Anticipation&Controversy

Our Future Hope

What God calls us to expect (Revelations 21:1-8):

  1. RESTORATION of all things. (Rev 21:1,5)

  2. NEARNESS to God. (Rev 21:2-3)

  3. FREEDOM from suffering and death. (Rev 21:4)

  4. Eternal SATISFACTION for believers and eternal PUNISHMENT for non-believers. (Rev 21:6-8)

Before I start, I just really wanted to thank everyone for letting me preach again because I'm surprised every time they ask me to come back and speak, I'm always like, "Oh, okay." But I was thinking about this a lot last night.

    00:11-00:11

    Thank you.

    00:12-00:28

Just being at seminary and just like studying all the time and being in class, I just get so up in my head sometimes with the Bible and preaching and it really does help me just to be able to come back and just be reminded that the reason I'm being trained is to minister to the church and to preach the Word of God.

    00:29-00:32

So I really do appreciate Jeff and the leadership team for asking me to come back.

    00:32-00:33

It really means a lot to me.

    00:35-00:37

So last summer, I had a really hard time finding a job.

    00:37-00:39

I was applying to all these different places.

    00:40-00:41

And I was getting really frustrated.

    00:41-00:42

I mean, I didn't want to go back to Walmart.

    00:43-00:43

    That was my one goal.

    00:43-00:45

I was like, I don't have to go back to Walmart, then I'll be fine.

    00:46-00:50

And so one day I get this magical letter in the mail and I see it's from this company called Vector.

    00:51-00:52

    I'm like, oh, Vector Security.

    00:52-00:53

I mean, I wonder what this is about.

    00:54-00:57

So I open it up and it's pretty much like this job offer pretty much.

    00:57-01:00

They want me to come in and interview and they have a number right there.

    01:00-01:02

And the pay looked really good and it seemed like too good to be true.

    01:03-01:04

I don't want to give away the end of the story.

    01:06-01:09

So I called the number and the lady's like, "Oh yeah, well, we're actually having an interview in a couple of hours.

    01:09-01:14

Why don't you just come in and we'll see how it goes?" I'm like, "Okay." So I update my resume.

    01:14-01:17

I put on my nicest suit jacket, nicest tie.

    01:17-01:22

So I drive to the building where the interview is supposed to be.

    01:22-01:24

And I get there and I walk up to the front door.

    01:24-01:34

And the first sign this probably isn't gonna be the way I thought it was gonna be was that there's like a Wrinkled piece of paper taped to the front door and it said vector sales. I was like, oh no What's this gonna be about?

    01:35-01:54

So I walk upstairs and I go into this room and it's filled with like 15 guys who look and are dressed exactly like me And I was like, yeah, I'm not gonna get this job And so I also look around and I realized that this is really a cutco Sales team. I see that the Cutco knife is on the desk. I see like a TV that says Cutco on it.

    01:55-01:58

It looks like one of those offices that can be packed up in three minutes just in case anything happens.

    01:59-02:02

And like there was like a sword in the corner. I was like, I don't know why that's there, but okay.

    02:02-02:08

And all those like, you know, motivational posters, like encouragement. It has a picture of like, you know, like two deer like running around or something.

    02:10-02:14

And I got so upset. I got so angry. I'm like, this is not what they said it was gonna be.

    02:14-02:16

And so I actually just like walked right out of the room.

    02:16-02:21

I think I actually took off my tie and threw it in the car and I ripped my resume in half because I was so upset.

    02:22-02:30

But I think, on a more serious note, I think all of us can relate to that, that we've all looked forward to something and eagerly expected something only to be let down, right?

    02:30-02:32

Am I the only person who's ever had that happen to?

    02:33-02:40

You daydream about this certain day or event and then when it comes, it leaves you unsatisfied with what it's really like.

    02:41-02:49

Maybe for you, it was Christmas this year, like, you know, for months and months, you You were just eagerly expecting Christmas to be the best you've ever had, but then it came and it disappointed you.

    02:50-02:57

Maybe for you it was like for me, like you wanted, you go to this interview for this dream job you've always wanted and you don't get it.

    02:58-03:01

And you're setting all your hopes and all your expectations on it and you don't know what you're going to do next.

    03:02-03:10

See, I think whether we realize it or not, we are people of intense anticipation and expectation who are looking for something to satisfy us and bring us fulfillment.

    03:11-03:14

I think if we just look over the course of our lives, we can see this is true.

    03:15-03:18

Life just seems to be a series of anticipation and letdown.

    03:19-03:28

Like, you know, you're in elementary school when you just look at all the middle school kids, like, "Oh, they're so cool. I can't wait to get there." And you get there, and you're going through puberty and everything, and you're like, "Oh, this is terrible. I just can't wait to get to high school.

    03:28-03:36

They're so awesome there." And you get to high school, and that gets really boring, and you just want to graduate, get away from your parents, and move on to college or whatever else you're going to do.

    03:36-03:38

Then you get to college, "I just can't wait to graduate.

    03:38-03:42

to find that person I'm going to marry, you know, ring by spring, that kind of stuff.

    03:42-03:45

And you find that person you're going to marry and then you move on to the next stage, kids.

    03:46-03:49

And then parents, what happens when the stress of parenthood hits?

    03:49-03:50

I can't wait till my kids move out of the house.

    03:51-03:52

I can't wait till I can finally be alone with my spouse again.

    03:53-03:56

The kids finally move out, your dreams come true, and there's still something missing.

    03:57-03:59

And then you realize, you know, work's always been stressful.

    03:59-04:00

I can't wait to finally retire.

    04:01-04:07

And then retirement comes and you still have this nagging feeling of anticipation and longing for something else.

    04:08-04:11

And you don't know what else to even look at, you don't even know what else to go after.

    04:12-04:21

See, I think life just seems like an endless cycle, an endless treadmill of looking after, going after that next stage which will magically bring us fulfillment, all that we've been longing for.

    04:23-04:25

But we're always constantly let down, right?

    04:27-04:32

See, I think the sense of longing anticipation has been hardwired within each and every one of us by God himself.

    04:33-04:38

And its fulfillment can only be found in Jesus Christ and the future hope he's going to bring.

    04:39-04:46

So we're so used to being disappointed and let down, and we always constantly look to the next thing as if it's going to be different and will provide us with something more.

    04:48-04:56

But hear me, there's only one thing that won't disappoint you or let you down, and that is the future that Christ will bring upon his second coming.

    04:57-05:00

So today we're entering into a new year in a couple days.

    05:01-05:12

And I want this to be a year for you that is marked by anticipation and longing for the next fad or the next stage of life, but for the future, new heaven and new earth which God will bring.

    05:13-05:19

So today we're going to dive into Revelation 21, 1-8 to discover the amazing future we have to look forward to.

    05:20-05:26

And I pray that it will move us closer to Jesus Christ and towards obedience to the mission of spreading the gospel He's entrusted to us.

    05:27-05:31

So we're just going to read the text. If you could just stand in reverence for God's word as we read the text.

    05:32-05:33

    It's Revelation 21, 1 through 8.

    05:40-05:54

The Apostle John writes, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

    05:56-06:00

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

    06:00-06:06

"He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, "and God himself will be with them as their God.

    06:07-06:11

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, "and death shall be no more.

    06:12-06:22

"There shall be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, "for the former things have passed away." And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new.

    06:23-06:28

"Also," he said, "write this down, "for these words are trustworthy and true." And he said to me, "It is done.

    06:28-06:31

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

    06:32-06:35

"To the thirsty, I will give from the spring of water "of life without payment.

    06:36-06:41

"The one who conquers will have this heritage, "and I will be his God, and he will be my son.

    06:41-06:56

"But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, "as for murderers, the sexually immoral, "sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, "Their portion will be in the lake of fire, "which burns with fire and sulfur, "which is the second death." Will you pray with me?

    06:57-07:02

God, we thank you so much for this, we thank you so much for your word, we thank you so much for this passage and all that it means to us.

    07:02-07:05

We thank you for the future hope that we have to look forward to.

    07:05-07:12

God, I pray you just hide me behind your cross, and I pray this wouldn't be about me, but it'd be about demonstrating your glory, Lord, and impacting people with your word.

    07:13-07:15

I thank you so much for all that you're about to do.

    07:16-07:18

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

    07:19-07:19

    You can be seated.

    07:21-07:25

See, I think if we're honest with ourselves, we really don't anticipate heaven.

    07:25-07:28

We really don't anticipate the future that God has in store for us.

    07:29-07:31

I think the reason is, it sounds boring, right?

    07:31-07:34

A lot of times the way the church presents, it just sounds really boring.

    07:34-07:36

Like we're gonna sit on clouds and pluck harps.

    07:36-07:38

Like I was looking at this cartoon the other day.

    07:39-07:40

Isn't that what we kind of think?

    07:41-07:44

Like it just seems like, okay, that's it?

    07:45-07:49

Or a lot of people are just like, well, we're just gonna sing and sing and sing for millions of years.

    07:49-07:55

Hey, I think new heaven, new earth is gonna be a lot of worshiping God, a lot of singing, but is that really all we're gonna do?

    07:55-07:56

    Is that really it?

    07:57-08:01

And you all think to yourselves, I think if we are really honest, it sounds boring.

    08:03-08:09

And you hear some guys say, you know what, I'd just rather go to hell and be with my buddies, we'll just play cards and drink beer and that kind of stuff.

    08:10-08:11

It's so much better than what heaven's gonna be like.

    08:11-08:12

And that's so not true, right?

    08:13-08:16

That's so not what God's word shows us.

    08:16-08:20

God's future for us in the new heavens and new earth is beyond our wildest expectations.

    08:20-08:22

    It's even beyond words.

    08:24-08:26

And it's not going to disappoint us or bore us at all.

    08:27-08:32

See, I think Satan will do anything to make this future eternity with God seem boring and not something to look forward to.

    08:33-08:37

Because he knows if you look forward to it, anticipate it, that will change how you live right now.

    08:38-08:42

Satan also wants us to get caught up in the controversial details of the second coming.

    08:42-08:44

All the charts and all the timing, all the end time prophecies.

    08:44-08:46

And that's not what I'm going to be doing here today.

    08:47-08:51

And I know whenever we get into end time stuff, I'm going to say things you're probably not going to agree with.

    08:52-08:53

I'm probably not going to agree with certain things you believe.

    08:53-08:54

    And that's okay, right?

    08:55-08:59

As long as we believe that Jesus is coming back, and we have this awesome future hope to look forward to.

    08:59-09:01

We can disagree about some of the details, right?

    09:02-09:02

    Amen?

    09:04-09:09

So I just want to silence the lies the enemy whispers into our ears about heaven.

    09:09-09:14

I want the word of God to speak for itself about what it says about the new heaven and new earth.

    09:16-09:21

I truly believe that the picture that Revelation 21 provides us with can transform how we live right now.

    09:24-09:25

So let's start with the passage.

    09:27-09:34

So John is given a vision by the Lord as he sees the future, and he starts out with saying then.

    09:34-09:37

So we have to stop right there and say, okay, well, what happened before the then?

    09:38-09:49

Well, chapter 21 is preceded by Christ's triumphal return to earth, where he returns as a victorious king who defeats all of his enemies and those who are in rebellion against him.

    09:49-09:57

And every single person in human history is taken before the judgment seat to receive his or her ultimate and final sentence, guilty or innocent.

    09:58-10:04

And those who place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will experience the glorious future we're about to study out in Revelation 21.

    10:06-10:20

And for those who rejected the gospel and continually rebelled against Jesus Christ, they will be sadly cast into hell forever to receive punishment for their sins, which is eternal separation from God Himself, the source of joy and the source of all life.

    10:21-10:21

    So please hear me today.

    10:21-10:24

There is a judgment day coming for each and every one of us.

    10:25-10:28

I've heard some people say, "Well, yeah, I'll just figure that out when I get there.

    10:28-11:06

You know, I'll just take God aside when I get to the judgment and just be like, 'Hey, I'll just tell Him what's going on and He'll understand my point of view.'" a very bad plan. There has to be a punishment for your sins. There just has to be. We have offended a holy and perfect God and He cannot deal with our sin. Either the judgment has to be poured out upon us in hell forever or upon Jesus Christ on the cross. There are no other options. So today, if you're still on the fence about Jesus Christ, I pray that you would repent of your sins, turn your back on your sins and turn to Jesus Christ and and believe in him so you can be saved and experience this hope we're going to talk about.

    11:10-11:15

So I think this passage, so there's four different aspects of the new heaven and new earth to expect.

    11:15-11:17

So first of all, what are we to expect?

    11:18-11:20

Number one, restoration of all things.

    11:22-11:36

John writes of this vision, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth "for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away "and the sea was no more." See, as I was studying out this passage, I came to my own conclusions.

    11:36-11:44

You may disagree about the conclusion I come to, but I think it's, in my opinion, it's the most faithful to Scripture.

    11:45-11:53

So I think whenever John says that the old earth, the old heaven will pass away, he does not mean that it will be destroyed and utterly annihilated.

    11:53-12:00

He's saying there's going to be such a radical change that the current broken condition of this world will pass away.

    12:01-12:05

The word new in this passage is the Greek word kynos, which doesn't mean brand new.

    12:05-12:10

It means something so utterly transformed to its core that it appears to be brand new.

    12:12-12:14

And I was reading through several commentaries getting ready for this sermon.

    12:15-12:22

I read one pastor describing it as a caterpillar who cocoons itself, and then one day it transforms into a beautiful butterfly.

    12:22-12:26

It goes from its old state into a new state.

    12:26-12:30

There's a sense which the caterpillar passes away, but it's going into a new state.

    12:31-12:36

It's not brand new, but it's so radical in its change, it's utterly transformed that it appears to be brand new.

    12:37-12:47

In the same way, this current world, the order, will pass away, and a new godly world will be ushered in that is devoid of sin and the destruction that comes with it.

    12:49-12:53

And you see this line right here, it says the sea was no more, and you're like, that's kind of random, why would they even write that?

    12:53-12:58

And you're like, I really love going to the ocean, I love fishing, that kind of stinks.

    12:59-13:09

But, as I was reading different commentaries, most theologians, most scholars believe that this is not a literal, there's no more bodies of water in heaven, just complete, just complete ain't land.

    13:10-13:10

    That's not what they believe.

    13:11-13:16

This is a symbolic metaphor for destruction and chaos that sin brings.

    13:17-13:24

So what John is saying that in this new future, sin is completely done away with as long as it's devastating and destructive effects.

    13:27-13:29

as God completely remakes his creation.

    13:31-13:42

I think this is similar to a beautiful house being built by a master builder, and everything about this house is completely perfect, down from the foundation of the house to the shingles on the roof.

    13:43-13:51

And he decides to rent out this beautiful, gorgeous house to these tenants, who end up completely just neglecting the house and even ruining it.

    13:51-13:57

And after years and years of the tenants living there, They finally move out and the builder returns to the house.

    13:58-14:01

He barely even recognizes his greatest creation.

    14:02-14:15

His family and friends tell him to gut the house and completely start over, but he decides to instead renovate the house and completely restore it to its former beauty and even make some extra additions to make it better.

    14:16-14:28

I think in the same way, God will completely restore the brokenness and dilapidation of of this world and bring beauty out of this ugliness instead of gutting it and just completely starting over.

    14:29-14:30

Now you may be thinking, why does it really matter?

    14:31-14:35

I mean, how's it being brand new compared to being transformed really make a difference in the end?

    14:37-14:44

Well, I think it's important because I think you treat and steward something differently when you know it's gonna be restored and not destroyed.

    14:45-14:46

    Let me say that again.

    14:46-14:52

You will treat and steward something differently when you know it's gonna be restored instead of destroyed.

    14:53-15:04

Guys in the room, if your dad had this beautiful classic car and he said, "Hey son, I want you to take care of this "for the next couple of weeks, 'cause in a couple of weeks, "I'm gonna take this thing to the junkyard "and smash it into a tiny cube." Would you really wanna take care of that car?

    15:04-15:07

You know, you'd be doing donuts in the Wendy's parking lot, you'd be smashing it into walls and walls.

    15:07-15:08

You don't really care how you treated it, right?

    15:08-15:16

And if your dad says, "Son, I want you to take care "of this car because in a couple of weeks, "I'm gonna completely restore it "and make it like it's brand new." That would motivate you.

    15:17-15:20

That would drive you to be faithful with what he's entrusted to you.

    15:21-15:24

In the same way, God has entrusted to us the care of his creation.

    15:25-15:31

And we should take this responsibility seriously because one day he will return to restore everything that's been damaged by sin.

    15:32-15:42

See, God also promises elsewhere in scripture that our bodies will be resurrected and made new in the same way the earth will be made new.

    15:42-15:44

They will be completely restored and renewed.

    15:45-15:54

So please hear me, don't buy into the lie that our eternity as Christians is about being snatched away into some spiritual realm while God has completely obliterates all that is physical.

    15:56-16:04

I want to read 1 Corinthians 15, 51 to 55 to talk about the resurrection of our bodies and I think it will really illustrate this point.

    16:05-16:07

Paul writes, "Behold, I tell you a mystery.

    16:07-16:11

We shall not all sleep, but we all shall be changed.

    16:12-16:53

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet will sound dead will raise imperishable and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, 'Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?' See, if God just opted out to go straight spiritual instead of physical because of the fall, then if you think about it, in a sense, Satan kind of won, and Christ's defeat of sin and Satan upon the cross wasn't really full.

    16:54-17:01

If God had to scrap his plans of a physical earth with physical people because of Satan, then that makes God look lame and powerless, right?

    17:02-17:04

It wasn't like God's like, "Oh man, Satan really got the best of me here.

    17:05-17:07

Well, what am I gonna do now?

    17:07-17:19

Well, I guess I'll just go straight spirit, no more earth, that's done, just destroy it." No, our hope is that Jesus Christ fully defeated death and Satan upon the cross.

    17:19-17:26

And one day God will fulfill his original plan of having a physical people ruling over a physical earth in his presence.

    17:26-17:27

That's what we have to look forward to.

    17:29-17:35

And our anticipation of this day should cause us to steward our bodies well and to not mistreat them.

    17:37-17:43

See, one day death will no longer be victorious as it is swallowed up in life that Christ will bring.

    17:44-17:47

See now, upon our deaths, our souls will go to be with the Lord in heaven.

    17:48-17:52

This is called, what theologians call, the intermediate state, the in-between state, or the middle state.

    17:53-17:56

But this isn't the final goal, this isn't the final state.

    17:56-18:05

Upon Christ's return, our souls will be united with our glorified and resurrected bodies as heaven and earth become one and we will dwell with God forever.

    18:06-18:11

So many Christians mix up the intermediate state and the final state.

    18:11-18:13

And it's such an important distinction.

    18:14-18:20

And our anticipation for restored earth and restored bodies should drive us to be faithful now.

    18:21-18:23

How we steward them and take care of them.

    18:24-18:33

Polluting and exploiting our planet and mistreating our bodies, not taking care of them is an offense to God and disrespectful to the stewardship he has entrusted to us.

    18:35-18:36

So what are we to expect?

    18:37-18:39

    First, restoration of all things.

    18:40-18:41

    Second, nearness to God.

    18:44-18:53

John writes in the second verse, I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepares a bride adorned for her husband.

    18:53-18:57

I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

    18:58-19:04

He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

    19:05-19:09

See, later on in the chapter, John gives the exact dimensions of this new city.

    19:10-19:14

And many scholars debate if this is the exact dimensions of the city, if it's metaphorical.

    19:14-19:18

Maybe the city's the bride of Christ, people who have died are coming down to heaven.

    19:19-19:20

I don't want to talk about that.

    19:20-19:25

But what I do want to talk about is the most important part of this passage is the symbolism behind it.

    19:27-19:30

See, if you take the exact measurements of New Jerusalem, it's a perfect cube.

    19:31-19:41

And you're like, "Okay, that's...why is that a big deal?" Well, the Holy of Holies and the tabernacle and the temple after it was in the shape of a perfect cube.

    19:42-19:46

And that was where God would specially manifest himself and dwell amongst his people.

    19:47-19:52

That's where the chief priest, the high priest would go in every year on the Day of Atonement to make a special sacrifice for sin.

    19:53-20:17

So what John is trying to show us here is that one day, all of the new creation will be God's Holy of Holies, God's temple, God's dwelling place where he will live in and amongst his people perfectly. This is what all of the Bible, this is what all of redemptive history has been moving towards. This is why Jesus came, so we could have a renewed earth filled with restored people and a perfect fellowship with their God.

    20:19-20:32

See, the separation between God and man was bridged by the cross of Christ and his resurrection, but finally and fully on this day, we will have unhindered relationship with God as heaven and earth join together and become one.

    20:34-20:38

I don't know about you, but I have moments where I feel disconnected from God and He seems distant.

    20:39-20:42

Days where I pray and it seems like my prayers don't even leave the room.

    20:43-20:44

But we're not always going to feel that way.

    20:44-20:52

One day, we'll have a perfect face-to-face relationship with our God that is devoid of sin and the shame that comes with it.

    20:52-21:00

I really can't wait until the day where I no longer have sin in my life and it gets in the way of my communion and my fellowship with God on a daily basis.

    21:02-21:04

See, isn't this what the whole Bible is about?

    21:05-21:10

Not us ascending to God, not about us going up to heaven, but in this passage, new Jerusalem comes down to us.

    21:11-21:16

That God humbly and mercifully and graciously comes down to save lost and broken people.

    21:16-21:19

Isn't this an awesome picture of what salvation really is?

    21:19-21:22

God coming down to his people, coming down to his creation to save it.

    21:24-21:36

The greatest blessing and joy of our future won't be our glorified bodies, which will be amazing and fantastic, nor our renewed earth, which will be flawless, but that we will dwell with our God in perfect union and community.

    21:37-21:50

See for the first two weeks of this series, Jeff was talking about Jesus' first coming, how Matthew, whose name was Emmanuel, which means God with us, and finally that idea will be completely fulfilled, that God will be with us.

    21:54-22:02

writes in one of my favorite verses in all the Bible, later in chapter 22, verse four, that they, believers, will see his face.

    22:03-22:05

    We'll see Jesus' face.

    22:05-22:12

Just imagine after years and years of praying to him and reading your Bibles about him, coming face to face with your Lord and Savior.

    22:13-22:19

Let us live for that day when our faith will finally become sight, our hopes and dreams will finally become reality.

    22:19-22:29

As we look into the face of our Savior and our God, He looks back at us, we will see all that we were searching so frantically for in this life, which was a relationship with God Himself.

    22:32-22:39

At the moment, at that moment we will realize that all that we sacrificed for Him was not even a sacrifice at all.

    22:39-22:43

It was just trading in worthless garbage for the ultimate treasure of knowing Jesus Christ.

    22:46-22:52

I think this is so key because nothing is more important in life-giving in a relationship than personal face-to-face time.

    22:53-22:56

So over the past four months, while I was in Louisville, I say Louisville, people make fun of me for that.

    22:57-23:00

But once I go down there and say Louisville, they make fun of me, so I lose-lose either way.

    23:00-23:07

I go down there and say Louisville, they're like, "Oh, Louisville." Then I come up here and Louisville, but whatever, I'm just gonna say Louisville, 'cause I'm not ashamed.

    23:09-23:13

See, nothing is more important in life-giving and a relationship than having face-to-face time.

    23:13-23:15

I'm sorry, kiddo, I'm about to embarrass you.

    23:15-23:16

She doesn't like my user and illustrations.

    23:18-23:30

So over the past four months while I was in Louisville for seminary, Kate was still here finishing up college and we had to communicate a lot over FaceTime and Skype, not Skype, I don't know why I said Skype, FaceTime, texting, phone calls.

    23:31-23:37

And see, while I liked talking to her over those times, I got really sick and tired of talking to her over a screen.

    23:37-23:38

I wanted to see her face to face.

    23:39-23:46

Even though I saw her several times throughout the semester, I couldn't wait until the day when I was finally able to come back home for a month and a half and just see her and to talk to her and be with her face to face.

    23:47-23:59

In the same way, I love speaking to the Lord in prayer and encountering him in his word, but there's coming a day when my faith will become sight and I will see him face to face and we will be together physically in that way.

    24:00-24:01

Isn't that what we're all hoping for?

    24:01-24:02

Isn't that what we're all longing for?

    24:02-24:04

Can you even imagine that day?

    24:07-24:16

See, I know prayer in this life can be frustrating at times and it seems pointless, but I urge all of us to let 2014 be a year of fervent prayer and utter dependence upon the Lord.

    24:17-24:28

'Cause this future reality of a physical face-to-face relationship with our God and Father should motivate us to communicate with God on a daily basis now so we can deepen our relationship with Him.

    24:30-24:35

It wasn't like I was down at seminary and thinking, you know what, I'll see Kate in four months from now.

    24:35-24:38

I'm just not gonna talk to her at all over FaceTime and phone calls.

    24:38-24:40

We're just gonna completely ignore each other for four months.

    24:40-24:49

No, we used phone calls, we used FaceTime, we used all those things that were available to us to deepen our relationship now, so our face-to-face time would be better later.

    24:50-25:00

In the same way, God has given us prayer to deepen our relationship with Him now, and to communicate with Him, and one day prayer will transform into a face-to-face relationship.

    25:01-25:05

So please do not neglect growing closer to the Lord in prayer this year.

    25:05-25:07

It is so vital, it is so key.

    25:07-25:09

Pray in light of that day.

    25:11-25:46

So what to expect? First, restoration of all things. Second, nearness to God. Third, freedom from suffering and death. John writes in verse 4, God is saying this from the throne, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more. Neither shall "be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, "for the former things have passed away." Imagine a world where every injustice is righted, every sad thing becomes untrue, and pain no longer exists.

    25:46-25:54

The new creation will be free from any and all forms of bodily, physical, mental, and spiritual pain and suffering.

    25:55-26:04

John even writes in Revelation 20, 14, that death itself will be thrown into hell, never to be seen again, because death is the enemy but it'll be thrown into the lake of fire one day.

    26:05-26:08

So we will no longer be attending any more funerals in the new heavens and new earth.

    26:08-26:12

Can I get an amen for that? No more funerals. No more death. None of that.

    26:13-26:19

Just imagine it. No more aches. No more pains. No more cancer and disease, which ravages so many of our loved ones.

    26:19-26:25

No more abortions of millions of millions of children. No more genocide. No more hatred. No more murder. No more lying.

    26:25-26:27

All of that will be gone forever.

    26:29-26:36

It's even hard to imagine, isn't it? It's hard to imagine a world like that with. We're just constantly bombarded with hatred and death and suffering.

    26:37-26:39

But one day all this will come to an end.

    26:41-26:45

See on another note, we all struggle through relational stresses in our family and friends, right?

    26:46-26:51

Some of you experienced this harsh reality at Christmas this year as arguments filled your home.

    26:51-26:53

Tension and anger filled your home.

    26:54-27:03

As old arguments resurfaced, old wounds were reopened, for some of us, for some of you, it feels like your family will always be broken and wholeness will never occur.

    27:05-27:18

But there's coming a day as this passage shows that there will be no more family strife, there'll be no more arguments that we will have a perfect relationship as the family of God without angerness, without bitterness, without hatred and miscommunication.

    27:20-27:27

So maybe for you this year, first Christmas, without that loved one who passed away this year, their family member, that friend, and you've had a hard time making it through the holidays.

    27:28-27:36

As we talked about, a day is coming when death will no longer exist, and it'll no longer be something we have to worry about, or think about, or deal with.

    27:38-27:41

See, I know in a room this size, there are many going through the darkest valleys imaginable.

    27:42-27:45

And at times, it seems as if you won't make it, or you can't go on.

    27:46-27:55

I hope that you'll find comfort in this passage, that one day all your pains will pass away, and God himself will wipe away the tears from your eyes.

    27:56-28:03

This season of suffering and trial will not last and will one day give way to eternal and everlasting joy.

    28:04-28:25

Paul writes in Romans 8, 18, "I consider that the sufferings of this present time "are not worth comparing with the glory "that is to be revealed in us." This was a man who was beaten, mocked, shipwrecked, and imprisoned, and he says, All these things that are happening to me are so momentary, not even worth comparing with all the things that God has prepared for me.

    28:27-28:28

So please don't lose hope in your situation.

    28:29-28:30

    Instead, anticipate this day.

    28:31-28:37

Have this outlook, that the hardships of this life are nothing compared to what Jesus Christ has in store for us.

    28:38-28:43

Only this perspective will allow you to have joy and life in the present, in the midst of trial.

    28:43-28:44

    Nothing else will help.

    28:45-28:47

    No self-help, no medications, nothing.

    28:48-28:51

Only this will give you the hope to make it through your storms of life.

    28:54-28:55

    So what to expect?

    28:56-29:09

First, restoration of all things. Second, nearness to God. Third, freedom from suffering and death. And fourth, eternal satisfaction for believers and eternal punishment for non-believers.

    29:11-29:18

Verse five says, And he was seated on the throne and said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down.

    29:18-29:27

"These words are trustworthy and true." So as followers of Christ, there should be no controversy surrounding the reality of the future coming of Christ.

    29:27-29:34

We may disagree about the details and the timing, but we can all rally around the word of God that Jesus Christ is returning.

    29:34-29:40

We can all rally around the truth that he will bring restoration and hope for all who are in him.

    29:41-29:44

Everything else is just not that important in light of that.

    29:46-29:49

So John writes that first and foremost, these words are trustworthy.

    29:49-29:53

They can bear the weights of all of our hopes and expectations.

    29:53-30:04

Everything else in this life crumbles under the enormity of our anticipation and longings for fulfillment, and we're always let down when we look to other things for what Jesus Christ can provide.

    30:05-30:10

Sex, money, people, spouses, success, they all crumble under our expectations.

    30:12-30:14

We always end up disappointed, don't we?

    30:16-30:18

    Also these words are true.

    30:19-30:23

They cannot be doubted in their honesty and their truthfulness.

    30:24-30:35

Yes, the world around us and even ourselves at times might think that they're not true and that there's religious nonsense, but there will come a day, as this word says, where no one will doubt their truthfulness, right?

    30:35-30:40

Everyone will see face to face that this word and its promises are true.

    30:40-30:45

On that day, no one will be able to mock us, make fun of us, put us down anymore, or persecute us.

    30:45-30:50

Everyone will bow their knee to Jesus Christ and know that what He said was true.

    30:52-31:00

So if you feel like everything else is falling apart around you and you can trust no one and look to nothing, trust in God and His word.

    31:01-31:06

I know sometimes God seems anything but trustworthy, but He is always working for your good.

    31:06-31:09

His word and His promises are true and you can trust in them.

    31:09-31:13

It can hold all the weight of your expectations in this life.

    31:17-31:18

God continues to say, "It is done.

    31:19-31:19

    It is accomplished.

    31:20-31:23

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

    31:23-31:32

To the thirsty I will give from the spring of water of life without payment." So God says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." This is the first and last letter of the Greek alphabet.

    31:32-31:34

    It's like God saying, "I am A to Z.

    31:34-31:37

I am the one who created this universe out of nothing.

    31:37-31:38

    I spoke it into existence.

    31:38-31:42

I'm the one who's currently sustaining it, and I will bring the end to pass.

    31:42-31:44

I am the beginning and the end.

    31:45-31:52

God is in a way laying out his credentials in a way to prove that he is able to keep his promises and that these words are trustworthy and true.

    31:54-32:05

If I told you this year that all your hopes and dreams would come to pass, all your resolutions would be accomplished because I would make them happen, you'd be like, how can you do that?

    32:05-32:07

Taylor, tell me how you can do that.

    32:07-32:09

I would say, "Oh, please don't worry.

    32:09-32:16

"I'm Taylor, a seminary student." Okay, you wouldn't trust that I'd be able to make that promise happen.

    32:16-32:17

    I wouldn't keep my promise.

    32:18-32:25

But we can trust God and His word, that He will do what He says He's going to do, because He is the creator and sustainer of all things.

    32:26-32:28

He can make the impossible possible, right?

    32:29-32:30

And we can always trust Him.

    32:30-32:31

    He can do anything.

    32:31-32:34

There is nothing He cannot do.

    32:37-32:44

He says to the thirsty, those who long for something, those who desire fulfillment, I will give from the spring of water of life without payment.

    32:45-32:50

This water is a symbol for satisfaction of desire and longing that we all have.

    32:51-32:54

Only God can provide the true fulfillment that we all need.

    32:55-33:01

He also promises that we will receive this satisfaction without payment because Jesus Christ paid for it on the cross.

    33:02-33:04

We cannot earn this or work our way towards it.

    33:04-33:08

But we can only freely receive it as a gift in Jesus Christ.

    33:12-33:15

John goes on to say, "The one who conquers will have this heritage.

    33:16-33:34

God says, 'I will be his God, and he will be my son.' But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns the fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

    33:36-33:44

So John writes that those who conquer or have a life that is marked by obedience will experience this new heaven and new earth and they will dwell with God forever.

    33:45-33:52

See, he's not saying that our actions or our deeds save us, but he's saying that our actions and our deeds reveal our heart.

    33:53-34:01

As Jesus once said, "Out of the overflow of our heart, out of the abundance of our heart, the mouth speaks." A good tree produces good fruit.

    34:02-34:04

A bad tree produces bad fruit.

    34:04-34:07

So in the same way, our actions reveal the true state of our heart.

    34:08-34:22

But as verse eight shows, a life that is marked by unrepentant sin and rebellion and resistance to God reveals that that person doesn't truly have a relationship with Christ and will spend forever away from him in hell.

    34:23-34:46

Now I really wanna be careful with this because we aren't called to be the salvation police, the salvation judges who walk around and say, "Well, that person's not saved. That person's saved." "That person, I mean, they cheated on their wife, they don't go to church, they're definitely not saved." "That guy, he reads his Bible every week, he goes to a small group, he goes to church every week, he must be saved." See, that's not our job. We cannot read people's hearts, we cannot judge people's hearts.

    34:46-34:47

    Only God can do that.

    34:49-34:55

And that brings so much destruction in the church when we try to judge people and say, "Oh, you're saved, you're not saved." That's only up to God.

    34:56-35:04

What I'm trying to show us here, that this passage is here to spur us on to obedience and faithfulness in this life.

    35:04-35:09

Because even the most mature Christian can find themselves in a season of rebellion and sin, right?

    35:09-35:10

    Am I the only one?

    35:12-35:48

God is trying to spur us on to be faithful to Him and to persevere through hardship by reminding us that those who persevere, those who don't quit, are those who will experience this future hope. I believe this anticipation in the future leads to present obedience now. See, I've heard many people say that focusing upon the second return of Christ will only make Christians lazy in this life and will distract them from the mission of spreading the gospel. See, I agree to some point that if we get bogged down in the details and the charts and all those prophecies, then we will miss out on what we're supposed to to be focusing upon.

    35:49-35:58

But I believe that living in light of the return of Christ is the only fuel of the fire of our obedience that will actually last, that will actually endure.

    36:02-36:10

See, right now I'm eagerly anticipating the day of July 26th more than any other day in the past, and the day that's come before it, or any other day in the foreseeable future.

    36:10-36:12

Sorry, kid, I'm gonna embarrass you again.

    36:13-36:13

    Why?

    36:13-36:17

Because that's the day I get to marry my fiance, to marry my wife.

    36:18-36:24

And I can't wait for that day when Kate will walk down the aisle to me so we can start our new lives together.

    36:26-36:28

And it's 209 days away, no one's counting.

    36:32-36:39

But July 26th occupies a lot of my thoughts and I daydream about that day a lot and the life that will follow it.

    36:39-36:43

But in no way does that anticipation and that longing make me lazy in the here and now.

    36:44-36:45

I'm like, oh, I can't wait to get married to Kate.

    36:45-36:50

I'm just gonna lay down in this lounger and just sit down until this wedding's just gonna magically appear.

    36:52-37:00

No, anticipation for this day has caused Kate and I to pick a venue, a date, hire a caterer, all these different things.

    37:01-37:06

And it's also caused us to work even harder to develop our relationship and save money for our future.

    37:07-37:10

See, thinking about that day drives us harder to work, not to be lazy.

    37:11-37:22

See, living in light of my wedding day causes me to work hard in the present And in the same way, living in light of the future return of Christ should cause us to share the gospel and not be complacent in witnessing.

    37:22-37:25

Because we want as many people to experience this hope as possible, right?

    37:26-37:27

    I mean, this is true.

    37:28-37:34

That some people, most people, according to the Bible, because the Bible says that this way is narrow and most people don't find it.

    37:34-37:36

Most people are on the path of destruction.

    37:36-37:50

If we believe that most people are on a path that leads to an eternal and everlasting hell that is filled with conscious torment, forever away from God, then we should do whatever we can to witness and disciple people for Jesus Christ.

    37:51-37:52

    Nothing else is more important.

    37:52-37:57

Living in light of this future will transform how we witness, how we disciple in the present.

    37:59-38:06

Fear of rejection and being uncomfortable should be drowned out in our lives by a concern for those who are lost and without Christ.

    38:08-38:09

Because the stakes are just too high.

    38:11-38:15

Life is short, eternity is long, Christ is returning.

    38:17-38:19

Time is short and hell is for real.

    38:21-38:29

So in conclusion, I can't promise that 2014 will be a year of happiness, health, fulfilled dreams, and accomplished resolutions.

    38:31-38:43

But I can promise you with absolute certainty that 2014 can be a year that is marked by radical obedience to Jesus Christ and deep joy live in light of this future that God has prepared for you.

    38:43-38:49

This year you can get off the endless treadmill of looking for satisfaction and fulfillment in the things this world has to offer.

    38:50-38:53

'Cause if you don't, you will continually hit dead ends and be frustrated.

    38:55-39:01

Instead, anticipate, long for, pray for, hope for, and live in light of the new creation which God will bring.

    39:02-39:03

If the worship team can just come up.

    39:05-39:09

God's end game and future for our lives is so much better than we have ever expected.

    39:09-39:11

It's beyond our wildest dreams, it's beyond words.

    39:12-39:14

It will by no means disappoint us or let us down.

    39:15-39:20

And I really couldn't resist the temptation to read a quote from one of my favorite books, and one of my favorite quotes of all time.

    39:21-39:24

It's the last book of the Chronicles of Narnia, The Last Battle.

    39:26-39:37

And if you're familiar with the book series or the movies, it's about these kids who go into this magical land named Narnia and they experience a Jesus figure named Aslan who takes them on these adventures.

    39:37-39:44

And in the last book, The Last Battle, Aslan recreates Narnia, he remakes it, and everything is completely restored.

    39:46-39:49

And he says to the children who've gone on all these adventures at the end, he says these words to them.

    39:51-40:06

"The term is over, the holidays have begun, "the dream has ended, this is the morning." And as he spoke, he no longer looked to them like a lion, but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them.

    40:07-40:09

And for us, this is the end of all the stories.

    40:10-40:14

And we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after.

    40:15-40:18

But for them, it was only the beginning of the real story.

    40:19-40:24

All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page.

    40:25-40:36

Now at last, they're beginning chapter one of the great story, which no one on earth has read, which goes on forever and ever, which every chapter is better than the one before.

    40:37-40:40

This is what we have to look forward to, brothers and sisters.

    40:42-40:45

A time when every day we're better than the one before.

    40:46-40:51

This isn't the end of our life, it's simply the beginning of the greatest story ever imaginable.

    40:52-41:02

Until that day when our faith becomes sight and our hope and dreams become reality, let us push forward with boldness and obedience to obey the mission that God has given to us.

  • 00:00-00:07

Alright, grab your sermon outline because we are going to take a test.

    00:09-00:15

This morning before church, the same Brooke Rhodaberger was like, "You're not doing the Christmas test again, are you?

    00:16-00:17

    This is an easier version.

    00:17-00:20

I remember the multiple choice one I gave.

    00:20-00:21

    That one was hard.

    00:21-00:24

Like I missed a bunch on that one and I was like so ashamed of myself.

    00:24-00:30

Like really dude, you've dedicated your life to one book and you don't even know it?" Yeah, that was a long time ago.

    00:30-00:34

Okay, so I thought, wouldn't it be fun to take a test, right?

    00:35-00:35

    All in favor?

    00:38-00:39

    Pam Campbell and Derek Edwards.

    00:42-00:44

Oh, the rest of you are going to love this.

    00:47-00:50

All right, we're not going to check your papers.

    00:52-00:52

    True or false?

    00:54-00:55

    Number one.

    00:57-01:00

The wise men were at the manger when Jesus was born.

    01:00-01:01

    True or false?

    01:04-01:05

    Circle it on your paper.

    01:07-01:09

Is this how you all take tests at school?

    01:12-01:14

Man, I wish I was in your class.

    01:19-01:20

    Okay, number two.

    01:21-01:23

The Bible says there were three wise men.

    01:30-01:31

Do you want to shout out the answers?

    01:39-01:41

At what point did you lose control?

    01:41-01:42

    You never really had it.

    01:45-01:54

Number three, the wise men rode on camels.

    01:59-02:00

Oh, not so sure now, are we?

    02:03-02:06

Number four, the wise men were kings.

    02:12-02:18

And number five, the wise men were Oriental and Ethiopian.

    02:22-02:23

    True or false?

    02:26-02:27

All right, time to check your papers.

    02:28-02:30

Hand it to the person behind you.

    02:30-02:31

    Remember doing that in school?

    02:31-02:33

that now, but do you remember doing that in school?

    02:33-02:37

He hands it to the person behind you so they can see how dumb you are.

    02:41-02:43

Okay, the answer to all of those questions is false.

    02:45-02:46

Did anybody get a perfect score?

    02:47-02:49

    All right, very good.

    02:49-02:51

    Very, very, very good.

    02:52-02:54

All right, let's review real quick.

    02:57-02:59

Were the wise men at the manger when Jesus was born?

    03:00-03:03

No, they were not, and you're going to see that in the text this morning.

    03:04-03:12

You're like, "But I have this nativity set." I hope you kept the receipt.

    03:14-03:15

Maybe you can just return to wise men.

    03:16-03:18

The Bible says there were three wise men.

    03:19-03:20

    That is false.

    03:21-03:23

Why do we associate the number three with the wise men?

    03:25-03:25

    Because of the gifts.

    03:27-03:54

on. You know that song, "We Three Kings of Orient Are"? Well, number three, "The wise men rode on camels." True or false? That's false. We don't know what they rode on, but some people, I mean, that's like, that's as surely in the Bible as the doctrine of justification by grace.

    03:55-03:55

    It's not.

    03:57-03:58

    What are we on?

    03:58-04:02

Number four, "The wise men were kings." Actually that's false.

    04:03-04:04

    They were not kings.

    04:07-04:10

So when you sing "We three kings of Orion" you'll just have to swap another word out.

    04:10-04:12

What are we going to swap instead of kings, Bob?

    04:12-04:13

What do you want to say?

    04:14-04:17

We three… We three guitar players.

    04:20-04:21

    have seen that one coming.

    04:22-04:26

The wise men were Oriental and Ethiopian, the answer to that is false as well.

    04:27-04:31

Okay, so we're going to talk about Matthew chapter 2.

    04:32-04:38

We're going to be looking at, in my opinion, some of the weirdest people in the Bible, honestly.

    04:39-04:53

And you have your nativity set up and you have, okay, God in the flesh and, you know, Mary, and there's Joseph, and then you get the animals, and you probably have some shepherds and an angel that sits on top of the thing.

    04:54-04:58

But then you have like these weird guys, right, like the wise men, like who are they?

    04:58-05:01

And there are a lot of misconceptions about who they are.

    05:03-05:10

And before we get into the text, I want to sort of give you a backdrop on some of the characters that you'll be encountering in the text.

    05:12-05:14

That way things will make a lot more sense.

    05:14-05:15

    So jot these notes down.

    05:16-05:23

This is a little 101 here in understanding some of these characters.

    05:24-05:26

But first of all, the magi, who were these guys?

    05:29-05:31

Well again, they weren't at the manger scene.

    05:31-05:40

In Matthew 2, verse 11, it says that they came to Jesus when He was at His house.

    05:42-05:49

So they were not, they were not, everybody say they were not, they were not at the manger, okay?

    05:50-05:53

Matthew 2:11 says that they came to his house.

    05:55-05:56

    So who were the magi?

    05:56-06:04

They were actually Gentile priests among the Persians and the Medes.

    06:06-06:09

They're actually known as advisors to the king.

    06:11-06:16

That's why we typically know the Magi, and that's why it's translated in a lot of your Bibles as wise men.

    06:17-06:18

    They were the king's advisors.

    06:21-06:22

    They were the scientists.

    06:23-06:24

    They were the doctors.

    06:24-06:25

    They were the mathematicians.

    06:25-06:27

    They were the philosophers.

    06:27-06:28

    They were the astronomers.

    06:30-06:33

They carried some religious beliefs similar to the Jews.

    06:33-06:35

They believed that there was one God.

    06:35-06:37

    They didn't go for idolatry.

    06:37-06:42

They believed that light was a symbol for God, and they even believed in blood sacrifices.

    06:42-06:48

But on the other hand, they were also involved in sorcery, witchcraft, astrology, and a lot of occultic stuff.

    06:51-06:52

    But they weren't kings.

    06:52-06:57

Actually, the interesting thing about these men is they would have been people who chose the king.

    06:58-06:59

    Okay?

    06:59-07:09

They would have been revered as this council of men with such wisdom that nobody would have become a king without their say-so.

    07:12-07:27

So maybe instead of "We Three Kings of Orient Are," we'll change that to "We Nobody Sure How Many Kingpickers of Persia Are." I don't think that's going to fly.

    07:29-07:32

So how did they enter the scene here, right?

    07:33-07:43

Like we kind of get Israel and Mary and Joseph, we're going to talk about some of the Jewish people in this scenario, but how did these guys get here?

    07:43-07:53

Well, when Israel was exiled, many of the Jews ended up living among the Babylonians, the Medes, and the Persians.

    07:54-08:02

So these magi, these wise men, would have been very familiar with what Israel was anticipating from the Old Testament.

    08:03-08:12

And all throughout the Law and the Prophets, God was promising that His Messiah was going to come, how He was going to show up and where He was going to show up.

    08:14-08:16

So these kingmakers would have picked that up from Israel.

    08:16-08:20

They would have been very familiar with the Law and the Prophets.

    08:22-08:26

Another group of characters we're going to encounter in this scene is the chief priests and the scribes.

    08:27-08:29

I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about them.

    08:29-08:40

We've talked a lot about them as we've been going through the Gospel of Mark, but they were the religious elite among the Jews, and they would have known their law and prophets forwards and backwards.

    08:42-08:53

But then there's another character that we're going to look at today, and I need to give you a little backdrop so you understand sort of the impact that Matthew is wanting to communicate in sharing this account.

    08:54-08:55

    Let's talk about Herod.

    08:57-09:01

Herod was a really weird guy.

    09:04-09:11

Herod built a temple to God, but murdered babies.

    09:14-09:21

Herod was a guy who gave generously to strangers, but he killed his own family.

    09:22-09:28

He was a guy who rose to power through bribery, and you can -- I'm not going to give you the whole history lesson, but I encourage you to look it up.

    09:29-09:30

    It is really fascinating.

    09:30-09:36

Starting in about 41 BC, he just rose to power through bribery.

    09:39-09:50

He was an extremely paranoid man who committed horrible acts of murder, constantly living in fear and suspicion.

    09:51-10:05

Herod would actually have spies everywhere, and Herod would disguise himself as a commoner and just mingle with people because he was sure that they were talking about conspiracies against him.

    10:10-10:12

Do you want to hear who's on his deadpool?

    10:14-10:15

    Absolutely crazy.

    10:16-10:17

    murdered his wife.

    10:22-10:29

He murdered his wife and then he murdered her mother, and then he murdered three of his sons, including the oldest.

    10:30-10:36

He had his brother-in-law drowned, which he made look like an accident.

    10:37-10:38

    He murdered his uncle.

    10:39-10:41

    He murdered his wife's grandfather.

    10:41-10:42

    He murdered his followers.

    10:43-10:44

    He murdered his own soldiers.

    10:44-10:45

    He murdered his friends.

    10:49-11:06

This guy was so crazy that when he was advanced in years and about to die, he had this arrangement with his people, "Hey, when I die, I want you to murder this list of prominent Jewish people." Why?

    11:07-11:10

Because he wanted people to be crying when he died.

    11:11-11:16

And nobody was going to cry because he died, but there would be crying because these important Jewish people died.

    11:17-11:18

That's the kind of guy Herod was.

    11:22-11:26

Caesar Augustus said it's safer to be Herod's pig than to be Herod's son.

    11:28-11:36

And then about 4 BC, he died in Jericho of a terrible disease.

    11:36-11:38

He was about 69 years old at the time.

    11:40-11:41

All right, so we've got the characters.

    11:43-11:44

    Let's look at the text.

    11:45-11:51

I'm going to read through this and just make some comments as we go through, and then we'll be making some application to wrap up, okay?

    11:52-12:23

Matthew chapter 2, it says, "Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king," that's the guy we were just talking about, "wise men from the east came to Jerusalem." Okay, so understand, they didn't show up at the manger scene, they actually first showed up in Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born King of the Jews?

    12:23-12:41

For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him." Now the verb tense in verse 2 where it says "saying," that verb tense is continual, meaning this, "They were asking around." So get this scene.

    12:41-12:46

Okay, so these kingmakers arrive into town, and people surely noticed, right?

    12:47-12:48

And they're asking around, they're going around.

    12:49-12:50

    "Hey, we're looking for someone.

    12:51-12:57

We're looking for the king of the Jews." So creating quite a stir.

    13:00-13:03

But to say they were looking for the King of the Jews, well, here's the problem.

    13:05-13:06

    That was Herod's title.

    13:07-13:15

The Roman Senate actually gave Herod the title, "The King of the Jews." Now, I told you what a paranoid guy Herod was, right?

    13:16-14:15

So when word got back to Herod that these people had come looking for the King of the Jews, and his title was King of the Jews, how do you think he reacted to that? How do you think he reacted? It'd be like this. It'd be like, "Amanda, somebody shows up at the hospital and walks up to you and they say, 'Excuse me, I'm looking for the dietician,' and you're like, 'That's me,' and they're like, 'No, I'm looking for THE dietitian." And you're like, "That's me!" That's very cute. "I'm looking for THE dietitian." Right? That's what was going on there. You know, imagine somebody showing up at your place of work, or "I'm looking for..." You're like, "That's me!" No, no, no, no. Well, here's the king, and getting word that these people are looking for, somebody that just happens to have their title.

    14:17-14:19

Now what's this star that they saw?

    14:19-14:24

Actually, in the Old Testament, the word for star literally means something that shines forth.

    14:25-14:27

    Was it a literal star?

    14:29-14:31

Well, we know it wasn't like the sun.

    14:33-14:35

What was this star that they saw?

    14:35-14:40

What was this shining forth thing, literally, that they saw?

    14:40-14:43

I'll draw this reference on Luke chapter 2 verse 9.

    14:43-14:49

Do you remember when the angel showed up to the shepherds?

    14:49-14:54

The Bible says in Luke 2, 9 that the glory of the Lord shone around them.

    14:55-14:58

And I believe that that's what these magi would have seen.

    15:01-15:02

    We saw this shining thing.

    15:02-15:07

I believe what they saw was the glory of the Lord shining forth.

    15:11-15:28

So picking up verse 3, it says, "When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled." Look at what Matthew says next, "and all Jerusalem with him." Okay, this word for troubled can also be translated agitated.

    15:30-15:32

it means he was shaken up.

    15:34-15:38

And you can imagine Herod, he hears about the… "Whoa, whoa, whoa, King of the Jews?

    15:39-15:40

Somebody's here looking for the King of the Jews?

    15:41-15:44

I'm the King of the Jews!" And it says all of Jerusalem with him.

    15:44-15:44

    Why?

    15:44-15:46

Why was all of Jerusalem stirred up?

    15:47-15:54

Because they know when Herod got sideways about something, people were going to die.

    15:56-16:00

So all of Jerusalem stirred up now.

    16:04-16:25

Verse 4 says, "And assembling all of the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born." That's like the president calling Billy Graham and asking him a Bible 101 question.

    16:26-16:27

    That's what's happening here.

    16:31-16:34

Every Jew knew where the Messiah was going to be born.

    16:34-16:35

    That's Bible 101.

    16:35-16:40

That'd be like the president calling Billy Graham and saying, "I have a Bible question for you.

    16:42-16:46

For God so loved the world that he gave his only," I can't remember the rest.

    16:46-16:47

    How does that go?

    16:47-16:48

It's like, "Dude, you don't know that?

    16:48-16:49

    Everybody knows that.

    16:49-16:51

He gave his only begotten son, right?

    16:51-16:53

Everybody knows that." "Oh, right, right, right.

    16:53-16:56

Yeah, yeah, I knew that." Well, that's what was going on here.

    16:56-17:17

Herod's like, "Where does your holy book say that the king of the Jews was supposed to be born?" "And they told him in Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet, 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" They're like Micah 5.2.

    17:17-17:18

    Everybody knows Micah 5.2.

    17:19-17:20

I mean, come on, Herod, really?

    17:21-17:23

    Seriously, what's going on there?

    17:24-17:26

So verses 7 and 8 we see that Herod has to plan.

    17:28-17:42

It says, "Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared." Like yeah, that flashing thing you saw, when did that happen?

    17:46-18:07

And he sent them to Bethlehem saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when When you have found Him, bring me word that I too may come and worship Him." What are the chances Herod really wanted to worship Jesus Christ?

    18:07-18:08

    What are the chances?

    18:08-18:13

Let's percentage-wise, we're not going to do a sliding scale, Ben, so percent, yeah, zero, right?

    18:14-18:14

    Zero percent.

    18:15-18:17

    He wasn't interested in worshiping.

    18:17-18:18

    What was he interested in?

    18:20-18:23

was interested in killing him, right?

    18:25-18:26

    But he hatches this plan.

    18:26-18:31

He finds out, "Well, the Messiah is supposed to be born in Bethlehem, so I'll send them to Bethlehem.

    18:31-18:37

I'll get them to do the work for me, and I'll tell them, 'Yeah, I want to join your little worship band thing, your worship team here.

    18:38-18:38

    Yeah, yeah.

    18:39-18:39

    Grab me a guitar.

    18:39-18:41

I want to join your worship team.

    18:41-19:08

And when you find him, let's worship.'" And then verse 9 says, "After listening to the king, they went on their way, and behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was." So again, this glory of the Lord, this Shekinah glory of God shows up again, and this time it leads them to Jesus' address.

    19:10-19:18

I love verse 10, it says, "When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy." I love that.

    19:18-19:20

Do you know how far these guys traveled to get here?

    19:21-19:22

    Like over a thousand miles.

    19:23-19:33

Okay, so they see this flash in the sky and they follow it for a thousand miles and apparently there's a time where they don't see it because the Bible says it shows up again.

    19:33-19:52

Well then it does show up again, and the Bible says, "And they were somewhat elated about it." Now, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy, ecstatic to see the glory of the Lord again, leading them right to Jesus' address.

    19:53-20:03

And then verse 11 says, "And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, And they fell down and worshipped him.

    20:05-20:19

Then opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh." I can't help but wonder, what were Mary and Joseph thinking about all this?

    20:19-20:30

Could you imagine, okay, like you just had a baby and you're in the house and these people show up, they're like, "Yeah, we kind of came from a thousand miles away.

    20:30-20:31

    Can we worship your baby?

    20:32-20:32

    Is that alright?

    20:33-20:34

    Can we worship your baby?

    20:34-20:35

Oh, by the way, we brought gifts.

    20:35-20:45

Is it okay if we just come into your living room and worship your baby for a while?" Really we just came a thousand miles and that's really all we wanted to do was to see him and worship him.

    20:45-20:45

    Is that okay?

    20:47-21:03

Like, "Put the coffee on." Jesus at this point, people a lot smarter than me estimate that he could have been anywhere from six months old to two years old at this point.

    21:06-21:08

And also here in your Bible you have the weirdest baby shower ever.

    21:11-21:19

I remember when our kids were born, people got us things like diapers and like onesies and like chew toys for kids.

    21:24-21:28

Look at the… apparently these wise men have never been to a baby shower before.

    21:29-21:30

    Look what they brought.

    21:31-21:35

Actually all joking aside, these gifts have very deep significance.

    21:35-21:36

First of all, they brought gold.

    21:38-21:40

Gift very appropriate for a king.

    21:40-21:42

The most valuable thing you can get your hands on, right?

    21:42-21:49

They're like, "This is what we want to give the baby, the most valuable thing we can, gold." Frankincense.

    21:49-21:50

    What is frankincense?

    21:50-21:54

Well, actually, frankincense was used in Old Testament worship.

    21:54-21:58

It was used in the altar of incense outside of the temple.

    21:58-22:04

It was always burning, and the smoke from the altar of incense was always rising.

    22:04-22:07

And the Scripture teaches that that smoke represents prayer.

    22:07-22:10

It's a picture of prayers ascending to God.

    22:13-22:18

It's a gift that certainly points to the divinity of this child.

    22:20-22:24

And then, by far the weirdest gift they brought was myrrh.

    22:25-22:27

Do you know what they use myrrh for?

    22:28-22:29

You know what they use myrrh for.

    22:29-22:30

    You've read this book.

    22:30-22:31

Do you know what they use myrrh for?

    22:32-22:33

    Embalming dead people.

    22:36-22:44

Okay, so it's like your baby shower, and they're like, "Congratulations, we brought you some formaldehyde." that.

    22:46-22:46

    Re-gift, right?

    22:47-22:54

Well, myrrh was actually used on Jesus himself.

    22:54-23:02

John 19, verse 39 says that Jesus was, his body when he died was prepared with myrrh.

    23:02-23:05

It's a gift given for someone who's about to die.

    23:06-23:13

And again, joking aside, this is a very significant gift because it reminds us that Jesus Christ came to die.

    23:14-23:16

We don't like to think about that at Christmas, do we?

    23:17-23:34

We like to think about the little baby in this story, if we overcome, overcame adversity, you know, nine months pregnant and traveling and no room, and we like are with all the animals and have a baby and we stick him in the feeding thing and everybody's just kind of cozy and happy.

    23:36-23:39

We don't like to think of the truth that that baby came to die.

    23:39-23:51

His purpose for coming was to suffer a horrible death as he was bearing God's wrath for my sin and for yours.

    23:51-23:55

And that's what the gift of Myrrh prophetically looks forward to.

    23:57-24:05

Then reading on, it says, "And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.

    24:07-24:28

Now when they departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him.' And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod.

    24:29-25:02

For this was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, 'Out of Egypt I called my son.'" And then verse 16, "Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men." What a horrible, horrible, horrible act of bloodshed.

    25:02-25:02

    Could you imagine?

    25:03-25:14

Murphy's, could you imagine, like, the military shows up at your house and says, "We have orders to murder Lincoln." Why?

    25:15-25:25

Because he fits a demographic, because he's a boy, and we're looking for all boys like about two and under, and if you have somebody in your house, like, we're going to kill him.

    25:27-25:48

Jared wanted to make sure that he got Jesus, and he was willing to murder an entire young generation of boys, because this old and dying man was so afraid of Jesus Christ.

    25:52-25:53

    Well, that's the story.

    25:56-25:59

That's the story of anticipation and controversy.

    26:02-26:05

This was the biggest season of anticipation in history.

    26:05-26:18

You can read Roman historians, rather, from this day record that everywhere throughout the East, men were looking for the advent of a great king who was to rise from among the Jews.

    26:19-26:27

There was something about this time in history that the world was anticipating a king was going to come from the Jews.

    26:30-26:35

So there was all this anticipation, but it was also one of the most controversial times in history.

    26:37-26:42

And as I shared with you last week, and Taylor will share with you next week, this happens every Christmas.

    26:45-26:55

Not just about who Jesus is, that's what we talked about last week, whose child is this, but the question I want to ask you this week is just simply this, what are you going to do with them?

    26:58-26:59

What are you going to do with Jesus?

    27:05-27:19

The controversy is the same, and the choices are the same, as they were with the wise men, As they were with Herod, when it comes to Jesus Christ, you have two options with Him.

    27:20-27:24

You can embrace Him, or you can try to eliminate Him.

    27:25-27:27

The question is, what side are you aligned with?

    27:29-27:33

Are you team Herod, or are you team wise men?

    27:36-27:40

Jot this down first of all, underneath what side are you aligned with on your outline.

    27:41-27:57

Jesus is a threat, I must eliminate Him." It's hard, isn't it, brothers and sisters, to not be Scrooge?

    27:59-28:06

Because I don't know if you noticed, but the atheists are out to try to ruin Christmas again every year.

    28:06-28:08

I get so sick of hearing this, honestly, every year.

    28:09-28:11

I just, I get sick of hearing it.

    28:11-28:14

I'm certainly sick of them trying to do it.

    28:15-28:20

And to be honest, I get just kind of tired of hearing everybody up in arms about it.

    28:21-28:22

I mean, you've heard it, right?

    28:24-28:33

Public displays, schools, concerts, pageants, this college group is banned from selling Christmas trees.

    28:33-28:42

You know, the latest thing I read last week, the American Atheists on Times Square I have this big campaign called Christmas is Better Without Christ.

    28:43-28:48

And every year we get so up in arms and I'm just like seriously we went through this last year.

    28:49-28:54

And if the Lord tarries, guess what we'll be talking about next year at Christmas?

    28:55-28:57

All the atheists are out to ruin it for everybody again.

    29:00-29:01

You're like what are you saying Pastor Jeff?

    29:01-29:02

Are you saying you don't care?

    29:02-29:03

    Of course I care.

    29:07-29:10

I don't have this in my notes because I wasn't going to say it, but I'm going to say it anyways.

    29:13-29:33

Everybody gets so up in arms about things like, "I went to the Banana Republic and they say happy holidays, not Merry Christmas, so never shop there." If your church wants to take Jesus out of the Christmas season, boycott your church.

    29:34-29:37

But look, the Banana Republic's not church, okay?

    29:37-29:39

    Walmart's not church.

    29:40-29:45

They're a retail place that's just selling stuff that we buy to give to people.

    29:47-29:48

    They're not your church.

    29:49-29:52

So why are we so offended that they don't say Merry Christmas?

    29:56-29:59

And I guess what I'm saying is, are we really surprised when dead people act like dead people?

    30:00-30:01

The Bible says they are lost.

    30:02-30:11

They are in a state of being rebellious and hostile in mind towards God, and then we're so shocked that they don't want anything to do with Jesus.

    30:15-30:16

    Can we let that go?

    30:18-30:29

Can we make a covenant that we're going to let that go, that when somebody says "Happy Holidays," we're not going to jump on Twitter and curse them out, like I saw some people do this week.

    30:29-30:38

"I can't believe I went to Home Depot and they said 'Happy Holidays.' It's Merry Christmas!" Seriously, seriously.

    30:40-30:44

Boycott your church if your church takes Jesus out of Christmas.

    30:47-30:49

I just don't see where that's a hill to die on.

    30:52-30:54

Dead people act like dead people.

    30:57-30:58

I had to get that out.

    30:59-31:00

    Thank you for listening.

    31:02-31:03

    No, I'm not done yet.

    31:06-31:07

    But these, I just, I don't know.

    31:08-31:11

These people just kind of confuse me, these American atheists.

    31:11-31:13

I was thinking about that a lot this week.

    31:13-31:15

    Christmas is better without Christ.

    31:16-31:17

You know what's so confusing to me about this?

    31:18-31:24

I can understand putting so much time and effort and energy and money into promoting something.

    31:25-31:26

    I can understand that, right?

    31:26-31:28

Can you understand that promoting something?

    31:29-31:33

Here are people that are spending all this time, money, effort, energy to promote nothing.

    31:35-31:39

And I would think that there would be something in the back of their minds that's like, "Can't we just live and let live?

    31:39-31:41

    Okay, the Christians love Jesus.

    31:41-31:42

We don't want to believe in Him.

    31:44-31:46

We won't send them Christmas cards or whatever.

    31:51-31:55

But to put so much effort into promoting nothing, I just, I don't get it.

    31:55-31:57

    I honestly, I just don't get it.

    31:58-32:01

But this whole "get rid of Jesus" thing, it's nothing new.

    32:02-32:03

    Every year it's been happening.

    32:04-32:05

It's only going to get worse, people.

    32:06-32:09

But I want you to see that, again, there's nothing new under the sun.

    32:10-32:15

In Jesus' day, the concept of getting rid of Jesus was literal.

    32:21-32:31

It's kind of a funny scene, in a sense, when you think that Herod was agitated and the whole city was beside themselves nervous and scared, and what was the thing that Herod was so scared about?

    32:31-32:33

    A baby.

    32:35-32:38

I've had the blessing of being around a lot of babies in my life.

    32:38-32:40

I have never been scared of any of them.

    32:43-32:45

    I still carry that title.

    32:45-32:47

I can take anyone in this room 12 and under.

    32:48-32:51

I've never been scared of a baby, ever.

    32:53-32:54

    Herod was scared to death.

    32:58-33:05

And honestly, he was right to be concerned, because that baby became a man.

    33:06-33:33

That baby became a man who said things like, "Deny yourself." That baby became a man who said things like, "Die to yourself." That baby became a man who said things like, "Lose yourself." That baby became a man what said things like, "Carry your cross daily and come after me." And the truth is, church, Jesus Christ is the biggest threat of anyone who's ever lived.

    33:36-33:40

Because, when you encounter Jesus Christ, He comes after your hearts.

    33:44-33:46

That's why Jesus is such a threat.

    33:47-33:59

Because, when you encounter Jesus Christ, the question is this, "Who's going to rule your life?" Herod was so concerned about the throne of his power.

    34:02-34:07

And Jesus goes even deeper than that because He's after the throne of your heart.

    34:07-34:08

Who's sitting there, by the way?

    34:10-34:11

    Sin says, "I do.

    34:11-34:12

I sit on the throne of my own heart.

    34:12-34:14

Nobody tells me what to do.

    34:15-34:29

I live life my way and by my rules." And then you encounter Jesus, and Jesus says, "I deserve to be sitting on the throne of your life.

    34:30-35:18

the Lord." And if you're a follower of Christ, can you remember the time that you had to wrestle through that? I remember back in 1995. I wish I could say somebody shared the gospel with me and it was just like, "Woohoo!" like immediate reception. No. I went through, thankfully, a brief season of wrestling over this lordship of Jesus issue. What was the real issue? The issue was I wanted to hold on to my sin, and I knew that if I came to Jesus, I was surrendering lordship of my own life up to Him. And I'll be honest with you, I wasn't sure I I was ready to do that.

    35:24-35:28

Jesus says, "Your way is destroying you.

    35:29-35:30

    Come to me for healing.

    35:30-35:31

    Come to me for life.

    35:32-35:45

Come to me and let me change you." It was only when I really saw the love and the grace of God to save me from my own self-destructive sinful habits.

    35:49-36:04

I'll tell you, it's a struggle for a lot of people, because the truth is Jesus came to save us from our sins, and we'd rather be saved in our sins.

    36:04-36:09

Can I get a ticket to heaven and still live the way I want to live?

    36:09-36:18

That's not an option, because the Bible says that when you truly embrace Jesus Christ by faith, He changes you.

    36:20-36:23

And if your faith hasn't changed you, it hasn't saved you.

    36:28-36:48

So if you're looking to Jesus as your fire insurance, your get-out-of-hell-free card, But His Holy Spirit hasn't been changing you and conforming you into His image, Romans 8:29, and maturing you.

    36:52-36:54

Then you haven't embraced Him for who He really is.

    36:57-37:04

If you'd rather hang on to your sin, your only option is to eliminate Jesus Christ.

    37:08-37:10

That's what the chief priests and the scribes did, by the way.

    37:13-37:19

You know, a lot of preachers say, "Well, the big crime that these guys committed was they were just sort of indifferent.

    37:19-37:27

Everybody knew that there was this king in town that the king makers were looking for, and they didn't even respond to it.

    37:27-37:42

They just pointed out the Bible passage to Herod and went on their way." So, when you get to the end of the Gospel of Matthew, you see that that's exactly what the chief priests and the scribes tried to do, was eliminate Jesus.

    37:45-37:47

Which by the way, you don't eliminate Jesus.

    37:49-38:00

Herod learned that, the chief priests and the scribes learned that, and if there's somebody here who thinks that you can eliminate Jesus Christ, this is your wake-up call.

    38:02-38:14

You can rebel against Him, you can protest, you can debate, you can try to drown Him out in the clamor of your selfishness, you can attempt to crowd Him out with your sin, but you will reckon with Him someday.

    38:19-38:31

could not get rid of him when he was an infant. And Herod was the most powerful person in the region. This is God's anointed and you will reckon with him.

    38:37-39:14

So if you are on Team Herod, that is what you are saying this morning, "Jesus is a threat. I must eliminate him. But finally, this is the team that we're on. By God's grace, Jesus is the King. I must embrace him. In the middle of the controversy, I encourage you this Christmas, and I'll encourage you again next Christmas, embrace Jesus Christ in worship. I don't really care what's happening at the Banana Republic. I don't even know if I've ever been to the Banana Republic.

    39:15-39:40

Have I been there? Oh, okay, that's right. I have been there once, right. I like their clothes. I'm not wearing Banana Republic clothes now, am I? I just know they're always like at the top of everybody's "don't shop there because they say happy holidays" list. I would say, "Hey, you know what? Let them do what they're going to do you, embrace Jesus Christ and worship.

    39:42-39:42

    How do you do that?

    39:45-39:47

I would say just do what the wise men did.

    39:49-39:50

Just do what the wise men did.

    39:50-39:51

What did the wise men do?

    39:51-39:53

Well, first of all, they pursued Him.

    39:54-39:55

    Pursue Him.

    39:59-40:00

You've got to love that diligence.

    40:00-40:03

They saw a flash in the sky and traveled a thousand miles.

    40:05-40:08

So what was your complaint about getting to church again?

    40:10-40:15

"It's too hot." And what was it last week?

    40:15-40:27

"It was too cold." Next week, "It was too just right." Like, are we still talking about church or are we talking about Goldilocks?

    40:30-40:31

    Pursue Him.

    40:32-40:36

Obviously, pursuing Jesus Christ is not about church attendance.

    40:39-40:48

It's about seeking Him in prayer, growing in that love relationship that God has blessed you with because of Jesus Christ.

    40:48-40:58

Seeking Him in prayer, seeking Him in His Word, it's allowing Jesus Christ the rightful place of being first in every area of life.

    40:59-41:26

him. Secondly, humble yourself before him. Humble yourself. Verse 11 says, "When they went into the house and they saw the child with Mary his mother," do you notice it says they fell down and worshipped him? Literally, boom, they went down on their faces in reverence.

    41:26-41:29

That's why I would tell you, church, humble yourself before Him.

    41:32-41:41

Forget the elf on the shelf, put yourself on the shelf, because coming to Christ always starts, continues with, and ends with humility.

    41:43-41:44

    So humble yourself before Him.

    41:47-41:51

And then finally, give to Him.

    41:53-41:53

    Give.

    41:56-42:00

Spiritual giving is part of worship.

    42:03-42:05

Ken, you keep track of our finances, right?

    42:05-42:07

You've been with us since before this church launched, right?

    42:08-42:10

How many times have I gotten up begging people to give?

    42:11-42:14

How many times have I gotten up here trying to give people a guilt trip to give to the church?

    42:14-42:16

How many times have I done that, Ken?

    42:17-42:17

    Not once.

    42:18-42:20

How many times do I plan on doing it?

    42:21-42:21

    Not once.

    42:23-42:24

    What's that?

    42:24-42:25

    Yes.

    42:25-42:28

The Bible says that God loves a cheerful giver.

    42:30-42:37

So as soon as I say give to him, there are some people here that are like, "Pack your bags, here comes the guilt trip." Not at all.

    42:38-42:39

    Not at all.

    42:41-42:43

I just want you to see what the Bible says, right?

    42:44-42:48

And the Bible says the part of worship is giving.

    42:52-42:53

    I don't come around when we're singing.

    42:54-42:57

I don't walk around the aisles when Darren and the crew's up here leading worship.

    42:57-43:00

I don't come around and, "You're not singing!

    43:01-43:03

You realize God's listening and you're not singing.

    43:03-43:04

Maybe you should lift your voices up.

    43:04-43:06

    You're not singing." I don't do that.

    43:06-43:07

    I don't do that.

    43:07-43:07

    Why?

    43:08-43:10

Because if you're going to worship, it has to come from where?

    43:10-43:12

It has to come from in here, right?

    43:13-43:14

    Giving's the same way.

    43:15-43:19

I don't know what a single person in this church gives to this church.

    43:19-43:19

    I have no idea.

    43:19-43:20

I can't make sure of that.

    43:22-43:25

There's only really one person I know what they give, and that's me.

    43:26-43:29

I don't know what anybody gives, and I don't want to know.

    43:30-43:35

But you have to see, folks, that giving is part of worship.

    43:37-43:47

And just like your time in prayer, time in the Word, your time singing worship songs, It's like all of those things have to come from the heart.

    43:49-43:55

In the same way, giving has to come from your heart.

    43:59-44:00

It has to come from your heart.

    44:00-44:02

It is an act of worship.

    44:04-44:14

Notice that these wise men weren't like looking around the house for something with the tag still on that they could re-gift to the baby, because after all, he's a baby.

    44:14-44:16

You probably won't remember what we brought them.

    44:19-44:21

They brought the very best of what they had.

    44:23-44:23

    Why?

    44:24-44:26

Because giving is an act of worship.

    44:29-44:33

So like the wise men, it's worship.

    44:33-44:40

You pursue Him, you go after Him, you seek Him in all things, you humble yourself before Him and then you give to Him.

    44:43-44:56

So no matter what team you're on, there's something that we can all agree on, and that is this, for all of their differences, both Herod and the Magi realized that Jesus was someone who must be reckoned with.

    44:58-44:59

Is He a threat to your sovereignty?

    45:01-45:05

Or is He your Lord who saved you from your self-destructive sin?

    45:09-45:14

And once again, you have the same options that Herod and the wise men had.

    45:16-45:17

    You have them this Christmas.

    45:19-45:23

You can try to eliminate Jesus Christ, or you can embrace Him in worship.

  • 00:00-00:05

Open up your Bibles to the gospel according to Matthew chapter 1.

    00:07-00:08

    Are you excited for Christmas?

    00:09-00:09

    Yes.

    00:14-00:19

Can you think of like, what's the one thing that you are most excited about for Christmas?

    00:20-00:25

What's the one thing that you look forward to the most for Christmas?

    00:27-00:28

What's the one thing you look...

    00:28-00:29

    What's that?

    00:29-00:30

    Taking the decorations down.

    00:31-00:33

    Taking the decorations down.

    00:33-00:35

Okay, thank you Ebenezer for that.

    00:39-00:45

Anybody else? What's the thing you look forward to the most every Christmas?

    00:45-00:47

Andy Nauer, what do you look forward to the most every Christmas?

    00:48-00:50

    Watching other people open gifts.

    00:50-00:51

    Watching other people open gifts.

    00:52-00:53

That is more fun, isn't it?

    00:53-00:55

I mean, we like to get stuff. Everybody likes to get stuff.

    00:55-01:08

But there's something more fun about like finding that perfect gift and you're just so excited to watch other people light up. Somebody else, what's your favorite part?

    01:10-01:13

Singing Silent Night on Christmas Eve. That's on the lineup, isn't it, Darren?

    01:14-01:17

Silent Night on Christmas Eve. Okay, phew. All right, yeah.

    01:21-01:30

I heard that there is a Harvest Bible Chapel somewhere out west that did not do Silent Night on Christmas Eve out of the fellowship immediately.

    01:33-01:35

It is a season of anticipation, isn't it?

    01:36-01:38

We're all looking forward to something.

    01:39-01:45

And it's also a season of great controversy as well. Have you noticed?

    01:46-02:19

That's why the title of this message you heard the song right what child is this The title of this message is Jesus anticipation and controversy Whose child is this Whose child is this and with all the anticipation this year Every year as we approach Christmas, you know giving the perfect gift and family get-togethers and vacation and special church services and And we also deal with all the controversy too, don't we?

    02:20-02:44

You know, there's all the, my favorite is the, "Don't say happy holidays, say what?" Do we have any, like, card-carrying members of that club here with us this morning that are like, "If somebody says happy holidays to me, I immediately correct them.

    02:45-02:49

Jay Naur, okay. I figured. You correct them, don't you?

    02:49-02:52

You probably also send the emails around.

    02:52-02:56

Don't shop at these stores, because these...

    02:56-02:59

Did you get those emails? Are they still going around? You know what I'm talking about?

    02:59-03:14

You get those emails that say, "Here are a list of the stores you are not allowed to shop at, because they say 'Happy Holidays' not 'Merry Christmas'." And, like, Banana Republic, The Gap, Old Navy, they just, like, run down the list of stores you're not allowed to shop at.

    03:14-03:15

    Controversy.

    03:16-03:20

Come on, let's celebrate Christmas without getting too serious about Jesus.

    03:20-03:28

Well, over the next three weeks, we're going to be talking about anticipation and controversy surrounding Jesus Christ.

    03:29-03:37

And there's it's never been more tangible than during his 33 years when he walked on this earth.

    03:37-04:03

So first of all, your outline anticipation, everybody, Matthew chapter one. I'm not going to read the whole genealogy. But last week, we answered a question that I get asked a lot. What's the unforgivable sin? This week, we're going to answer a question another question that I get asked quite a bit, like what's up with all the genealogies in the Bible?

    04:03-04:30

Like how many people like kind of skin that part when you get to it. We'd be honest in church. Okay. All right, we'll pray for you. There's a reason the genealogy is in the Word of God. And I'm not going to read through this. But look at Matthew chapter one in verse one. It says the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, The son of David, the son of Abraham.

    04:33-04:47

And then Matthew starts with Abraham and gives this genealogy moving the generations forward, leading up to Joseph, Jesus, quote unquote, earthly father.

    04:48-04:49

And what's up with the genealogy?

    04:49-04:50

Why is it in your Bible?

    04:51-04:52

I want you to write this down.

    04:53-04:54

Why is the genealogy in your Bible?

    04:55-04:57

Write this down. God keeps his word.

    05:01-05:02

Sometimes we just have to wait.

    05:06-05:08

That's what this genealogy is in Matthew.

    05:09-05:10

It's this God keeps his word.

    05:13-05:14

    Sometimes you have to wait.

    05:16-05:22

And when you look through the genealogy, notice he says the son of David, the son of Abraham, and then he gives us list.

    05:23-05:25

Why did he highlight David and Abraham?

    05:27-05:30

Well, you remember, the promise was made through Abraham.

    05:31-05:36

God says that one of your descendants is going to be a blessing for the whole earth.

    05:37-05:39

    And son of David.

    05:42-06:04

Drop this reference down, we're not going to turn there, but you should know this reference, 2 Samuel chapter 7 verses 12 through 13. God promises David that he would have a descendant that would rule eternally. Okay, David was the king and God made a promise to David, he's I'm establishing your throne forever.

    06:05-06:14

Ultimately, one of your descendants is going to be the eternal king. That's why Matthew is giving us this genealogy.

    06:15-06:20

He's saying that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of that promise.

    06:20-06:24

The promise that God made to Abraham is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

    06:25-06:29

The promise that God made to David is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

    06:32-06:33

    The waiting is over.

    06:34-06:40

This is the fulfillment of something that's been anticipated since the very beginning of time.

    06:43-06:52

But I want to spend our time today talking about the controversy that picks up in chapter 1 in verse 18.

    06:53-06:58

Because really, this is again kind of piggybacking off of what we talked about last week.

    06:58-07:02

The issue of who is Jesus Christ divides people.

    07:03-07:04

    Who is Jesus?

    07:04-07:20

And you have to understand that one of the big issues that people still argue about today, that actually people were really up in arms about when Jesus was on the earth is this question.

    07:22-07:23

    Who is Jesus' dad?

    07:25-07:26

    Who is he?

    07:28-07:30

    It was an issue.

    07:31-07:38

John chapter 8 verse 41, Jesus said to the Pharisees, you are doing the works your father did.

    07:40-07:41

You remember what the Pharisees replied?

    07:44-07:49

Says, they said to him, we were not born of sexual immorality.

    07:50-07:51

Why do you think they said that?

    07:54-08:00

That was an attempted harsh, harsh, harsh insult.

    08:01-08:35

towards Jesus saying hey you might have been but we're not again questioning his parentage and then Jesus used it actually Matthew 22 verse 42 again this was Jesus to the Pharisees he said what do you think about the Christ whose son is he? It's a big issue. Who is Jesus? In fact, you can take a little tour of the cults. I don't encourage you to do that.

    08:35-08:39

But jot this down. They're all over the board on who Jesus is.

    08:39-08:42

According to Islam, Jesus was a good prophet, but he's not God.

    08:44-10:19

According to the Jehovah's Witnesses, Jesus was a created angel. He was Michael, who became Jesus for a while and then became Michael again. According to Christian scientists, the term Christ is an advanced stage of consciousness that Jesus had. Okay, like we all have like this Christ principle within us. It just so happens that Jesus of Nazareth had a lot of it. That's what the Christian scientists say about Jesus. The Mormons teach that Jesus is actually Satan's brother. He was created by Elohim, which is a name for God, through a sexual union with Mary. Scientology teaches that Jesus is an advanced human with a strong energy glow. I don't even know what that means. He just has a strong glow about well the Christians get it right we get it right like Christians we're like we we totally get like who Jesus is don't we hold that thought you So in 1998, the Harris group polled 7 ,441, not people on the street, not even people in ministry, 7,441 Protestant ministers.

    10:21-10:21

    Okay?

    10:22-10:22

    Everybody with me?

    10:22-10:27

    They pulled 7,441 Protestant ministers.

    10:29-10:37

And I'm going to give you the percentages of these ministers polled that did not believe that Jesus was born of a virgin.

    10:38-10:39

    You ready for this?

    10:40-10:47

The American Lutherans, 19% said, I don't believe, clergy, pastors.

    10:48-10:52

19% of these pastors said, I don't believe he was born of a virgin.

    10:52-10:55

    The American Baptists, 34 percent.

    10:56-10:59

One out of three said, no, I don't believe Jesus was born of a virgin.

    11:01-11:03

    Episcopalians, 44 percent.

    11:06-11:07

    Presbyterians.

    11:09-11:10

    Forty nine percent.

    11:10-11:13

Now, I'm not really a math guy, Ken, but that's like almost half right?

    11:14-11:14

    Almost.

    11:14-11:15

    Almost.

    11:17-11:23

half of the pastor, the Presbyterian pastors that they told, do you believe in the virgin birth of Jesus?

    11:23-11:25

Almost half of them said, no, I don't.

    11:26-11:26

    I do not.

    11:28-11:38

Methodists, 60 percent and congregational pastors, seventy nine percent.

    11:42-11:45

And they're like, well, you know how pastors are, right?

    11:46-11:47

And I'm like, what do you mean by that?

    11:47-11:53

Well, I believe among the pastors, among the clergy is taking its toll on the American public.

    11:53-12:01

Listen to this. In 1998, the year the clergy poll was taken, 83 percent of the Americans.

    12:04-12:14

Believed in the virgin birth, so we're talking like the non pastors, like the people who get it, 83 percent said, I believe that Jesus was born of a virgin.

    12:15-12:16

Well, do you know 10 years later?

    12:20-12:22

    That 2008, right, Ken?

    12:24-12:28

That percentage dropped over 20 points to 61%.

    12:30-12:32

Meaning, like, what's all this mean?

    12:33-12:46

What this means is you have a lot of pastors out there that say, "I don't believe that Jesus was born of a virgin." And their influence on their congregations is diminishing the amount of people that still believe that.

    12:50-13:01

Well, the very concept of salvation, according to Jesus, is tied into a correct understanding of who he is and what he has accomplished.

    13:02-13:05

So let's look at what the Bible says. All in favor of that?

    13:06-13:09

    All opposed? Irrelevant.

    13:12-13:13

    And this is church.

    13:17-13:20

I was so going to make a denominational joke, but I'm not going to.

    13:24-13:31

Verse 18. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

    13:33-13:34

    Like, how did it happen?

    13:35-13:37

    How was Jesus Christ born?

    13:37-13:39

    How did that take place?

    13:40-13:42

Matthew says it took place this way.

    13:44-13:54

When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

    13:58-14:00

Okay, little is known about Mary and Joseph.

    14:00-14:03

if it was likely that they were teenagers.

    14:06-14:10

As that was the common age for entering into a betrothal.

    14:10-14:11

    What's this betrothal?

    14:11-14:15

It says his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph.

    14:16-14:18

Well, do you know there are two stages of a Jewish wedding?

    14:18-14:19

    Did you know that?

    14:20-14:23

There's the Kiddushin and the Chuppah.

    14:26-14:28

    The Kiddushin, what is that?

    14:28-14:30

Deuteronomy chapter 20, verse 7 talks about that.

    14:31-14:36

It's when both parties, families enter into a legal contract.

    14:36-14:40

They're legally married, but they don't have any contact.

    14:41-14:46

OK, this is just like signing the papers.

    14:47-14:51

It's like sign and drive with no driving.

    14:52-14:54

    To use a Volkswagen term.

    14:56-14:56

    Everybody with me?

    14:57-15:00

You like signed the papers, but hands off.

    15:03-15:56

And actually to end the betrothal, you had to get a legal divorce. And how long did that last? Well, it lasted six to 12 months. Okay, so how does that sound? Like, I love this woman I want to marry you okay so I'm here and I will get this done and you know sometime in the next year well the purpose of that was to test marital faithfulness like are you really committed to me are you really committed are you committed to me well we'll find out because we're going to make the commitment to each other now and prove that commitment well then you have the Who but now how do you think you pronounce that Hoopa? How do you think you pronounce it?

    15:56-16:12

Like with a Jewish accent go ahead throw that out Come on. Try again. Come on. Don't be shy Okay, thank you that's what I was thinking Now that was the wedding. That was the wedding party. Do you know how long their wedding party lasted?

    16:13-16:55

seven days You've been to some weddings. You thought were long Seven days it was like everybody came to town put up the guests put up the family They're hanging out. What are all these people going home? They're not Not for another week So they had this big seven seven day party well, that's what they were betrothed Okay, so looking at the timeline you understand what's happening with Mary and Joseph here, right? They entered the marriage contract And you're like well How do we know that they?

    16:56-17:33

Work together. Well Matthew tells us it says before they came together Meaning sexually she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit You can imagine the shock right that Mary had Well, imagine the shock that Joseph had, finding out this woman that you love is suddenly pregnant, and she's telling you that that was the Holy Spirit.

    17:33-17:40

It says, "And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

    17:43-18:03

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit." Now, did Mary tell Joseph that before the angel did?

    18:03-18:04

    I don't know.

    18:05-18:07

I just have to wonder what that conversation was like.

    18:07-18:09

I mean, obviously, Joseph knew she was pregnant.

    18:11-18:12

    Did they not talk about?

    18:14-18:15

    Well, Joseph was resolved.

    18:15-18:17

He could have gone one of two ways.

    18:19-18:22

In the first century, you could make it a very public thing.

    18:25-18:27

You know, this woman cheated on me.

    18:28-18:32

And he could have dragged her into public shame, made a spectacle of her.

    18:34-18:36

But they also had provision to do it quietly.

    18:37-18:50

And Joseph said, "We'll just do this quietly." The angel in a dream tells Joseph, "That which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

    18:51-19:01

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet.

    19:01-20:12

behold the Virgin shall conceive and bear a son and they shall call his name Emmanuel which means God with us when Joseph woke from sleep he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him he took his wife but knew her not until she had given birth to a son and he called his name Jesus so it seems that Matthew is driving a point home right again verse 25 it says that Joseph knew her not meaning physically they were not together says until she'd given birth to a son. Some churches teach that Mary was perpetually a virgin and the Bible would teach otherwise. You know, we saw in our message last week, Mark chapter 3, Jesus' brothers were waiting for him. John chapter 7, Jesus' brothers. Matthew chapter 13 says that Jesus had brothers and sisters. Okay, children born to Mary and Joseph after Jesus was born.

    20:15-20:20

And Matthew over and over in his passage seems to be driving a point home, and that's this.

    20:21-20:24

Virgin born, God in the flesh.

    20:24-20:25

    Did you pick that up?

    20:27-20:28

You think that's what Matthew's talking about?

    20:28-20:30

Virgin born, God in the flesh.

    20:30-20:31

    Anybody else get that?

    20:35-20:37

A lot of people do not get that.

    20:40-20:48

And it is still a hotly debated topic that was just really born of a virgin.

    20:49-20:50

    Do you believe that?

    20:52-20:53

    Do you believe that?

    20:56-20:58

I read an article this week.

    21:00-21:03

I read several, but this one in particular stuck out to me.

    21:05-21:15

It says, "Why I deny the virgin birth." I'm going to warn you, I'm gonna share some of these things, it might shatter your faith.

    21:16-21:17

Some of these very compelling reasons.

    21:18-21:19

    Is the sarcasm coming through?

    21:19-21:24

Some of these very compelling reasons why I deny the virgin birth.

    21:26-21:34

Number one, it says, "There is no reliable evidence." there's no reliable evidence.

    21:37-21:54

My reply to that would be, even aside from the four eyewitness accounts that we have in printed form in our hands, but he goes on in this to say, "We have no eyewitness accounts, "no doctor confirmations, and no DNA samples."

    21:55-21:56

    (audience laughing)

    22:00-22:04

I don't believe Jesus was born of a virgin because we don't have a doctor's confirmation on that.

    22:06-22:11

To which I would say, Luke was a doctor, right?

    22:13-22:16

And then he says, I love this, no DNA samples.

    22:18-22:18

    You know what he's saying?

    22:20-22:22

    Maury Povich was not around.

    22:22-22:23

    (audience laughing)

    22:24-22:26

Because that's the only way you settle these things.

    22:27-22:37

Drag Mary and Joseph onto the Maury set, He pulls out his big envelope, sits back with his legs crossed and that smarmy little smirk on his face.

    22:43-22:50

"Joseph, you are not the father." Then Joseph gets up.

    22:50-22:52

"Yeah, I knew that was of the Holy Spirit.

    22:53-22:54

I knew that was the work of God.

    22:55-22:57

Yeah." Have you seen the Morrie Show?

    23:00-23:02

That's what happened on the one episode that I watched.

    23:09-23:12

Okay so there's no reliable evidence.

    23:12-23:13

    Incorrect, sir.

    23:14-23:17

Number two, he says the earliest references are late and sparse.

    23:17-23:20

Why is such an important story left out of all the early sources?

    23:20-23:24

Paul, the earliest New Testament author, never mentions the virgin birth.

    23:26-23:27

    Incorrect.

    23:30-23:32

The earliest references are late and sparse.

    23:32-23:35

Do you know Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John were all contemporaries?

    23:37-23:42

And two of them were disciples, Matthew and John.

    23:46-23:49

He says Paul, the earliest New Testament author, never mentions the virgin birth.

    23:49-23:52

Yes, he does. We'll talk about that in a minute.

    23:53-23:56

Number three, he says it's the same old myth.

    23:56-24:01

The claims of Jesus' birth are no different from any of the other virgin birth legends.

    24:02-24:03

    What's he talking about there?

    24:05-24:07

This is an argument you'll hear a lot.

    24:08-24:11

The story of Jesus borrows from mythology.

    24:11-24:17

Like you can study like ancient mythology and there's these virgin born stories and there's even these resurrection stories.

    24:18-24:19

    Well, here's the problem.

    24:21-24:29

If you really study your history, The stories of those mythological characters changed after Jesus.

    24:31-24:43

You see, Jesus was the truth, and they went back and changed some of these mythological accounts to make them like Jesus.

    24:45-24:46

So who's copying off of who, really?

    24:51-24:55

Number four, if your faith isn't shattered now, this will do it.

    24:57-24:59

    Don't throw your Bibles away.

    24:59-25:01

We'll collect them and give them to somebody else.

    25:02-25:05

But listen to this compelling reason why I deny the virgin birth.

    25:05-25:09

Number four, is it more likely to be a lie or to be true?

    25:11-25:11

    What?

    25:16-25:18

    That's how you evaluate everything.

    25:20-25:22

Is it more likely to be a lie or to be true?

    25:23-25:28

And then number five, he said, why deny the virgin birth?

    25:28-25:30

He said, we would never ever believe this today.

    25:31-25:35

He said, imagine a teenage girl in your neighborhood telling this story.

    25:36-25:39

Why does it change just because Jesus' birth happened 2000 years ago?

    25:40-25:41

There's no evidence in favor of it.

    25:44-25:47

My response to that would be, this is a once in history event.

    25:49-25:55

So yeah, I would not believe it today because God promised it was gonna happen once and it did.

    25:57-25:58

    So enough of that.

    26:01-26:05

Why I believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and why it matters.

    26:05-26:06

You ready to write some things down?

    26:07-26:11

Why I believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ and why it matters.

    26:11-26:14

Number one, God's word is trustworthy.

    26:17-26:21

Really this issue, was Jesus really born of a virgin?

    26:21-26:23

Do you know what the issue really is?

    26:25-26:29

The issue is this, is God's word true or not?

    26:29-26:30

    That's really the issue, right?

    26:31-26:46

And you can take any of these issues, the Christians and atheists and, that's really what it boils down to, creation, evolution, virgin birth, natural, whatever.

    26:46-26:50

However, what it boils down to is the integrity of God's Word.

    26:54-26:57

The Bible has satisfied the greatest minds in history.

    26:58-27:09

And that's why when Matthew says back in verse 18, that's why when he says the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

    27:13-27:18

I'm going to take Matthew's word for it because I wasn't there.

    27:18-27:18

    Were you there?

    27:22-27:26

Can we dismiss or doubt any event in history that we didn't personally attend?

    27:29-27:37

And when we face tough doctrines like this, we need to decide if we're going to agree with the Bible, which has been proven reliable over and over and over again.

    27:40-27:42

We're going to take the unreliable word of a man.

    27:44-27:45

    So God's word is trustworthy.

    27:47-27:49

That's the issue. You either believe the Bible or you don't.

    27:52-27:55

    Secondly, God's word is clear.

    27:57-27:58

    God's word is clear.

    28:04-28:05

    because here's what people do.

    28:07-28:10

Oh yeah, the Bible says that he was born of a virgin.

    28:14-28:15

    Scholarly voice.

    28:18-28:21

But you need to understand what the word virgin really means.

    28:22-28:25

Like, my dad had that talk with me.

    28:26-28:28

    No, you don't understand.

    28:29-28:37

Then they give you all these lists of like Hebrew and Greek words, And they say, do you know that word could mean maiden?

    28:38-28:41

That word could mean young woman.

    28:42-28:43

I'm like, could it mean virgin?

    28:44-28:49

Well, it could, but do you know that word could mean maiden or young woman?

    28:52-28:53

    What about what Matthew said?

    28:53-28:54

    He said it twice.

    28:55-29:02

Before they came together, verse 18, verse 25, But he knew her not until she'd given birth to a son.

    29:03-29:04

    That's pretty clear, isn't it?

    29:06-29:06

    Is that clear?

    29:08-29:11

This isn't the only virgin birth passage, by the way.

    29:11-29:14

    Genesis 315 was the first.

    29:16-29:32

Did you know that Genesis 315 is a virgin birth passage when God tells Satan, the serpent, I will put enmity between you and the woman in between your offspring and her offspring.

    29:34-29:38

    Literally, God says her seed.

    29:39-29:44

Without giving a biology lesson, women aren't typically spoken of as having seed.

    29:46-29:52

But very clearly, God says that it's going to be the seed of a woman.

    29:55-29:57

What about Paul, did he have any comments on this?

    29:57-30:04

Actually, yeah, Galatians 4, 4 says, when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his son born of woman.

    30:06-30:09

I think he was very specific about why he worded it that way.

    30:11-30:12

    God's word is clear.

    30:14-30:20

The Bible not only says that Jesus is God, but did you know that the Bible also says that God is Jesus?

    30:20-30:21

    Did you know that?

    30:22-30:23

    Drop these references down.

    30:23-30:24

    I'm giving you some homework.

    30:25-30:39

Zechariah 1210 Old Testament prophecy, God talking about the end times when there's mass revival in Israel, he says, and they will look upon me whom they have pierced.

    30:41-30:49

This was before the incarnation, and God was speaking of himself being the one who was pierced.

    30:53-30:54

Do you have anything New Testament?

    30:56-30:58

Actually, yeah, Acts 20, verse 28.

    30:59-31:06

The Apostle Paul tells the Ephesian elders that God purchased the church with his own blood.

    31:08-31:09

    He doesn't say Jesus.

    31:10-31:11

    He says God.

    31:13-31:17

So the Bible not only says that Jesus is God, but the Bible also says that God is Jesus.

    31:18-31:19

    God's word is clear.

    31:19-31:29

So look, you believe it or you don't believe it, but let's not try this like gymnastics around the word meanings, because God's word is clear on it.

    31:31-31:33

Number three, God says it is a sign.

    31:35-31:36

God says it is a sign.

    31:36-31:40

Matthew here quoted from Isaiah chapter seven in verse 14.

    31:42-31:52

The context of that passage, Israel was afraid that Syria was going to come wipe out the kingly line back in Isaiah's day.

    31:52-32:03

Okay, so here's like this national threat, and Israel's like, our nation's gonna be finished, our kingly line is gonna be wiped out from the Syrians, and God says, it's not, and I'm going to give you a sign.

    32:03-32:07

I'm going to give you proof that the kingly line is going to continue.

    32:09-32:13

And here's the proof, he says, behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son.

    32:13-32:15

They shall call his name Immanuel.

    32:17-32:19

So God says it is a sign.

    32:23-32:25

    So answer me this.

    32:26-32:35

If the passage is just talking about a young woman giving birth being the sign, can somebody explain to me how that is a sign of anything?

    32:37-32:45

God's like, "I'm going to do something amazing. Are you ready for this?" A young woman's going to have a child.

    32:48-32:50

And all of Israel was underwhelmed.

    32:50-32:51

    Like, really?

    32:54-32:55

    That's the sign?

    32:56-32:57

    A woman's going to have a baby.

    32:57-33:00

That, I guess that happens sometimes.

    33:02-33:03

    That's not a sign.

    33:04-33:07

God says the sign is a virgin is going to...

    33:07-33:08

    Would that be a sign?

    33:09-33:11

A woman that never knew a man having a baby.

    33:11-33:12

Do you think that's a sign from God?

    33:13-33:14

    Absolutely.

    33:15-33:16

    God says it's a sign.

    33:18-33:20

Number four, God is able to do it.

    33:24-33:25

    Do you think it's far-fetched?

    33:26-33:29

Do you think it's far-fetched for the Holy Spirit to conceive in a woman?

    33:30-33:30

    Mary did.

    33:33-33:34

    Remember Luke's accounts?

    33:35-33:36

    Luke chapter 1, verse 34.

    33:37-33:40

You know, Mary, you're going to have a baby.

    33:41-33:43

Mary's response was, how will this be since I am a virgin?

    33:46-33:48

There again, Mary didn't say, how can I have a child?

    33:48-33:49

    I'm a young woman. I'm a maiden.

    33:51-33:52

The issue was, I've never known a man.

    33:54-33:55

    You remember Gabriel's response?

    33:57-34:00

He said, nothing will be impossible with God.

    34:02-34:04

Nothing will be impossible with God.

    34:06-34:08

And church, this is just Theology 101.

    34:11-34:12

    This is Theology 101.

    34:13-34:21

God has the power to accomplish anything that he purposes, and he always does what he promises.

    34:22-34:23

    That's just Theology 101.

    34:25-34:30

If God says he's going to do something, give me a percentage.

    34:30-34:32

What's the chances it's going to happen?

    34:33-34:33

    100%?

    34:36-34:40

And, like, is there anything too hard for God?

    34:40-34:41

    What's the answer to that?

    34:41-34:42

    No.

    34:45-34:54

So that's why I have to wonder when you have people coming and saying, "Well, I don't believe in the virgin birth." Well, what do you believe God's capable of?

    34:56-35:17

Because if you believe His Word, He was capable of speaking the entire universe into existence just by opening his mouth and you think having a woman become pregnant without being with a man you think that's too hard for God? God's like yeah I figure it out like everything else but that that stuff's a little...

    35:17-35:19

God is able, he is able.

    35:20-35:27

And finally why I believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ it was necessary.

    35:30-35:35

Jesus had to be fully God and fully man.

    35:38-35:42

As it was man who brought sin into the world, man had to bear the punishment.

    35:44-35:58

But he also had to be God to be sinless and to offer a perfect once and for all sacrifice that we would believe.

    36:00-36:12

Because here's the thing, if Jesus just had two human parents, then that would make Jesus what?

    36:14-36:15

    Just a normal guy, right?

    36:18-36:26

And you've heard, I'm sure you've heard these stupid theories like, well, you know, well Joseph and Mary, they were together and this was like a big cover-up thing.

    36:27-36:34

There's even this one ridiculous like, fable about Mary got impregnated by some Roman soldier or something.

    36:34-36:35

    Have you heard that?

    36:36-36:37

    It's foolish.

    36:37-36:39

    It's absolutely foolishness.

    36:41-36:47

But the truth is, if Jesus just had two human parents, he's no different than me.

    36:48-36:49

    He's no different than you.

    36:50-36:51

    He's just a guy.

    36:56-37:00

And here's the implication of the virgin birth that you cannot miss.

    37:02-37:18

If Jesus wasn't fully God and fully man when he was lying in the manger, then he wasn't fully God and fully man when he was nailed to the cross.

    37:21-37:31

You see, and if he wasn't fully God and fully man, when he was nailed to the cross, then the sacrifice that he laid down means nothing.

    37:32-37:33

    He was just a martyr.

    37:34-37:36

He was just some religious teacher.

    37:36-37:41

He was some good rabbi that was misunderstood if he was just a man.

    37:45-37:52

But because he was fully God and fully man, We believe that when he was on the cross.

    37:53-37:57

Somehow we have a harder time believing that when he was in the manger.

    38:00-38:01

So the truth of the Bible stands.

    38:02-38:15

Jesus Christ, human mother, conceived by the Holy Spirit, 100% human and 100% God at the same time.

    38:16-38:33

And Matthew says, "All of this anticipation from history has been realized." But the Bible really leaves no controversy when it comes to who Jesus Christ's parents are.
