Open up your Bibles, please, to the book of James and chapter 5. Our series is "Intentional Faith, a How-To Guide." That's what the book of James is about. And the The title of today's message is "How to Rescue a Stray." You know, when a dog wanders away, we do all kinds of things to try to get that dog back, don't we?

    01:19-01:28

We make signs, we put up the posters on the telephone poles, We get on social media with a picture of the dog.

    01:32-01:39

But the question on the table today is this, what do we do when a person wanders away?

    01:42-01:44

I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please.

    01:46-01:59

I'm gonna ask that you would pray for me and I will pray for you as we take some time in getting the God's Word together.

    02:05-02:13

Father, today again, as we open up your Word, once again, we're gonna be talking about something that's very important to you.

    02:16-02:25

And I just ask for my brothers and sisters here, that this is something that would be important to us.

    02:31-02:34

    Give us your heart, Father.

    02:37-02:49

Let your spirit manifest the mind of Christ in a powerful way in this church.

    02:52-02:53

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    02:54-02:57

And all of God's people said, amen.

    02:58-02:58

    Amen.

    02:58-03:05

As we've been going through the book of James, we've been evaluating, right on cue.

    03:05-03:10

As we were going through the book of James, we've been evaluating my walk, right?

    03:11-03:17

We've been forced to examine how I'm walking with the Lord.

    03:21-03:23

We've talked about how to handle trials.

    03:25-03:28

We've talked about how to handle temptations.

    03:28-03:31

We've been talking about how to be impartial.

    03:33-03:38

We've been talking about the place of good works and the life of a believer.

    03:38-03:40

We've been talking about how to watch your mouth.

    03:43-03:45

We've been talking about how to have right relationships with people.

    03:48-03:51

We've been talking about how to speak the truth.

    03:52-03:57

We've been talking about how to pray and how to see answer to prayer.

    03:58-04:10

And all through James, as we've been going through this, I've been concerned about my walk and you, as you've been going through this with me, you should be concerned about your walk with Christ.

    04:16-05:17

I also need to be concerned about other people's walks with Christ. And you need to be concerned with other people's walks with Christ. So James closes this letter with one final appeal, and it's for evangelism. Look at verses 19 and 20 in chapter five, he says, "My brothers, "if anyone among you wanders from the truth "and someone brings him back, "let him know that whoever brings back a sinner "from his wandering will save his soul from death "and will cover a multitude of sins." So you see this appeal isn't directed at any unsaved person that's been hearing this.

    05:17-05:19

This appeal is directed to the saved.

    05:21-05:23

And this is it, this is the sermon.

    05:24-05:31

Go after the unsaved who stray from church.

    05:34-05:45

There are those in every church including this church, who are not born again believers.

    05:47-05:56

There are people that are sitting here and will be sitting in the next service who will be watching this stream that they're not born again, transformed followers of Jesus.

    05:57-06:00

They are really better described as churchgoers.

    06:00-06:01

    That's in every church.

    06:03-06:18

And these people will attend and they'll get involved, and they'll even make connections in the church, but they're not saved.

    06:23-06:28

That was me for the first 20 years of my life.

    06:29-06:34

I went to church every week, but I wasn't saved.

    06:37-06:46

And eventually, people that go to church, but really aren't following Jesus, eventually they leave.

    06:47-06:48

    Why?

    06:50-06:51

Well, I think it's pretty obvious, isn't it?

    06:54-06:56

You start to feel hypocritical, right?

    06:57-07:12

You're just, you're too invested in your sin, and you realize you can't be living in and for your sin Monday through Saturday, and then just show up on Sunday and pretend like you're this follower of Jesus.

    07:12-07:17

You can't sustain that for an indefinite period of time.

    07:18-07:22

Sometimes people leave the church because they're challenged on their walks.

    07:23-07:25

Like, are you following Jesus right now?

    07:26-07:31

Are you really pursuing him with your whole heart the way the Bible calls you to?

    07:31-07:33

People get called out on their sin.

    07:33-07:37

Hey, you're professing to be a believer, but you shouldn't be living like this.

    07:40-07:42

And you wander away from the church.

    07:43-07:45

This is who John was talking about, 1 John 2, 19.

    07:47-07:49

He says, look at this, do we have that verse?

    07:50-07:51

    There it is.

    07:51-07:57

It says, "They went out from us, "but they were not of us.

    07:58-08:14

"For if they had been of us, "they would have continued with us, But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.

    08:16-08:19

So the question here is believers, believers, I'm talking to you.

    08:19-08:23

Those of you who are born again believers in Christ, this is for you, okay?

    08:24-08:32

What do you do with unbelievers who used to come to church and left?

    08:34-08:46

That's why in your outline, it says, "How to Rescue a Stray." How do we do it?

    08:49-08:50

    This is important to God.

    08:51-08:52

    It's important to us.

    08:52-08:52

    All right?

    08:53-08:54

    So, let's get on board.

    08:54-08:57

Number one, learn how to recognize a stray.

    09:00-09:01

Learn how to recognize a stray.

    09:02-09:03

    Look at verse 19 again.

    09:04-09:16

He says, "If anyone among you," in the church, okay, "wanders from the truth." Now we get to clarify here.

    09:17-09:19

"Wanders from the truth," note that.

    09:20-09:24

That is not talking about the guy or the girl or the family.

    09:24-09:26

It's like, hey, you know what?

    09:26-09:27

    You know what, Dan?

    09:27-09:32

I've loved coming to Harvest here, but there's a church closer to my house.

    09:32-09:34

is just much easier for me and my family.

    09:35-09:36

So we're gonna be worshiping there.

    09:36-09:39

That's not who's in view here, okay?

    09:39-09:47

Or somebody that's like, yeah, I really, I like harvest, but like Northway just has better coffee or something like that.

    09:47-09:48

So I'm gonna go worship there.

    09:48-09:55

We're not talking about the person that is going to another church because for some reason it's a better fit for their family.

    09:55-09:56

    That's fine.

    09:56-10:00

You go where God is feeding you and you go where God is using you.

    10:00-10:02

That's how you should select a church.

    10:02-10:04

We're not talking about those people.

    10:05-10:06

    He's very clear here.

    10:07-10:10

We're talking about people who wander from the truth.

    10:11-10:19

That word wanders in the Greek is where we get the word planet, because a planet was viewed as a wandering body.

    10:20-10:23

And it's used to describe unsaved people.

    10:23-10:25

That's why, again, look at verse 20.

    10:25-10:31

It says, "Let them know whoever brings back a sinner, A sinner.

    10:32-10:34

Again, he's talking about an unbeliever.

    10:36-10:41

A sinner is a term that's used for someone who is committed to their sin.

    10:42-10:44

All right, this is an important distinction, right?

    10:44-10:47

A sinner is someone committed to their sin.

    10:47-11:07

That's why Jesus said, Matthew 9, 13, "For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." That's why Paul said one of my favorite verses in the New Testament, Romans 5, 8, "but God shows his love for us, "and that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Listen, born-again believers are not labeled as sinners.

    11:10-11:18

If you're a born-again believer, God does not call you a sinner, he doesn't view you as a sinner, and you need to stop calling yourself a sinner.

    11:18-11:19

    Well, I'm just a sinner.

    11:19-11:20

    Okay, then go sin.

    11:22-11:23

    That's not who you are.

    11:24-11:26

    You're a blood-bought child of God.

    11:28-11:31

And while we struggle with sin, everyone does.

    11:32-11:33

    We're not sinners.

    11:33-11:35

    This is talking about unbelievers.

    11:36-11:51

But also notice in verse 20, it says, "Brings back a sinner from," look at this phrase, "his wandering." That's speaking of somebody's lifestyle.

    11:52-11:53

    His wandering.

    11:53-11:54

    That's talking about somebody's path.

    11:55-12:01

That's talking about somebody that has made a decision that they are going to actively be committed to their sin.

    12:01-12:03

    Okay, this is my wandering.

    12:03-12:05

This is the direction that I'm going to go.

    12:06-12:10

I'm going away from the truth and I'm going to pursue my sin.

    12:10-12:11

    That's who we're talking about.

    12:13-12:15

You're like, okay, I got it.

    12:15-12:16

Why are we being so emphatic about this?

    12:16-12:20

Because if we're going to rescue a stray, we need to know what a stray is.

    12:22-12:31

It's someone who's avoiding church because they don't wanna be around the truth, because they wanna live in their sin.

    12:34-12:40

So if we're going to obey this command, church, step one is knowing who we have to go after.

    12:43-12:49

And I just have to insert here that this is why relationships are so important in the church.

    12:52-13:01

You know, if you come to church late, and you scoot out early, and you never go to small group, no one knows what's happening in your life.

    13:03-13:04

That's a dangerous place for you to be.

    13:06-13:10

We have to be connected to each other so that we can look after each other.

    13:11-13:22

That way, when someone starts to wander, and they're avoiding any kind of fellowship, they're on our radar, okay?

    13:22-13:25

So we gotta learn how to recognize a stray.

    13:25-13:30

Number two, you gotta remember what's at stake.

    13:31-13:32

    What's at stake?

    13:32-13:33

    Look at verse 20 again.

    13:34-13:48

It says, "Whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering," look at this, "will save his soul from death." That word for soul in the Greek refers to the whole person, okay?

    13:51-13:57

You're not a body that has a soul, you are a soul that has a body.

    13:57-14:00

And that's what this is talking about, the whole person.

    14:00-14:05

And when he's talking about death here, save his soul from death, he's talking about eternal death.

    14:06-14:07

    He's talking about hell.

    14:07-14:10

    He's talking about Revelation 21.

    14:10-14:28

Look at this, it says, "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

    14:29-14:32

That's what he's talking about here, eternal death.

    14:34-14:47

James is saying here that if someone is avoiding God's people, and they're avoiding God's truth, and they're more committed to their sin than they are to Jesus, It's evidence that they're unsaved.

    14:47-14:53

And if that's the case, they're heading to hell.

    14:56-14:57

And hell is a real place.

    15:00-15:03

And real people are really going there.

    15:07-15:08

    Do you care?

    15:10-15:11

I mean, does that bother you?

    15:15-15:17

    I've challenged you before church.

    15:17-15:22

Imagine that you drive home from church and you see that your neighbor's house is on fire.

    15:23-15:31

And you look through the picture window of their house and you see that your neighbor is asleep on the recliner while the house is burning down around him.

    15:31-15:31

    What do you do?

    15:31-15:32

    What do you do?

    15:34-15:37

Would you say, well, it's not really my business.

    15:39-15:50

Would you say, I don't wanna force my beliefs on someone else about fire and the danger of being in a burning house.

    15:50-15:55

I wouldn't wanna enforce my beliefs on someone or like try to force my beliefs on someone.

    15:55-15:58

You know, live and let live, that's what I always, is that what you would do?

    15:59-16:00

If you did that, you'd be a monster.

    16:02-16:03

I know exactly what you do.

    16:03-16:14

You would throw something through that window and you would kick that door down and you would go in there and you would grab him by the seat of his pants and the scruff of his neck and drag him out of there.

    16:17-16:29

Shouldn't we be even more motivated knowing that somebody who is walking away from Christ who obviously never was really transformed is heading to hell?

    16:29-16:30

    Shouldn't we care about that?

    16:34-16:47

I gotta tell you, over the last 27 or 28 years I've seen this so many times.

    16:48-16:58

Someone walks away from church and they live their sinful lifestyle and they die suddenly.

    17:02-17:03

    Maybe it's a drug overdose.

    17:03-17:04

    That happened to my family.

    17:06-17:11

Maybe it's a tragic car or motorcycle accident.

    17:11-17:12

I've seen it so many times.

    17:15-17:16

    (congregation laughing)

    17:17-17:22

And we're left with family and friends saying, if only I'd reached out.

    17:23-17:26

Oh, you know, I was gonna call them and I didn't do it.

    17:28-17:34

If only I'd said something, if only that day I was gonna go to their house, if only I'd gone over.

    17:37-17:44

And I've had too many people come to me and say, Pastor Jeff, what if they're in hell right now I didn't say anything.

    17:49-17:50

You know how many times I've had to answer that question?

    17:53-17:55

To tell people, you know, God is just.

    17:57-17:58

God always does the right thing.

    17:59-18:04

And he will deal with that person in perfect, holy justice.

    18:04-18:04

    He will.

    18:06-18:10

Nobody's gonna show up in heaven and say, well, God, you really blew it on that one.

    18:11-18:15

Everything God does is perfect, and we will glorify Him for that.

    18:15-18:30

But at the same time, it should step up our urgency in going after others so that whatever happens to them, we can honestly say, I tried my hardest to go after Him.

    18:31-18:32

Don't you wanna be able to say that?

    18:33-18:34

    Like, yeah, He strayed.

    18:34-18:38

Yeah, He was living a sinful lifestyle, but I have a clear conscience that I went after Him.

    18:42-18:46

You've got to remember what's at stake, saving a soul from death.

    18:47-18:49

Number three, how to rescue a stray.

    18:49-18:52

Well, you've got to recognize a stray and you've got to remember what's at stake.

    18:53-18:58

    Number three, take responsibility, man.

    18:59-19:00

    Take responsibility.

    19:05-19:10

A couple of words you need to take note of here.

    19:13-19:22

Verse 19, it says, "And someone brings him back." Someone, that's the word, someone brings him back.

    19:22-19:23

    Then look at verse 20.

    19:24-19:35

"Let him know that whoever," oh, there it is again, "whoever brings back a sinner." someone, whoever.

    19:37-19:39

Like what does that word whoever mean in the Greek?

    19:39-19:40

    You know what it means?

    19:41-19:41

    It means whoever.

    19:46-19:54

Like whose job is it when someone walks away from the church and they're living in sin, whose job is it to go after them?

    19:55-19:57

And you're like, it's the pastor's job, right?

    19:58-19:59

    It's the pastor's job.

    20:01-20:02

    Yes, it is.

    20:04-20:08

    And no, it's not, both.

    20:10-20:14

    Yes, it's my job.

    20:15-20:17

    Yes, it's Taylor's job.

    20:18-20:20

    Yes, it's Rich's job.

    20:21-20:21

    Yes.

    20:25-20:28

And no, it's not just us.

    20:30-20:31

    It's everyone.

    20:32-20:34

And look, as this church grows, have you noticed?

    20:35-20:36

    Have you noticed?

    20:36-20:41

As the church grows, it is harder and harder to keep tabs on everyone.

    20:42-20:42

    It just is.

    20:43-20:47

When our church was 20, it was super easy.

    20:50-20:54

When our church was 60, still pretty easy.

    20:56-21:02

where we are today and the way we're going, it is getting harder and harder to keep tabs on everyone.

    21:03-21:17

But listen, so many of you are involved in these ministries, like small group, like mom to mom, like precepts, like fishermen.

    21:20-21:23

You have relationships with people that I don't have.

    21:26-21:27

And do you know what that means?

    21:29-21:36

That means it's your responsibility to go after a stray because we can have somebody straying and I don't even know that they're straying.

    21:36-21:41

I might not even know their name, but they've been faithfully coming to your group.

    21:45-21:48

    It's your responsibility, okay?

    21:50-21:59

So when you sit here and hear a message like this, You can't just be like, yeah, yeah, yeah, the church really needs to do a good job of going after people that walk away from Jesus.

    21:59-22:02

No, you need to do a better job on that.

    22:02-22:04

    That's all of our job.

    22:08-22:11

Look at 2 Corinthians here, a couple of verses.

    22:14-22:38

Verses 18 and 20, it says, "All this is from God, who through Christ "reconciled us to himself "and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." Then verse 20, it says, "Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ." Look at this last phrase.

    22:39-22:47

It says, "God making his appeal through us." Do you see that?

    22:47-22:53

Those verses, us with the ministry is the same us that God reconciled.

    22:55-23:01

And the gospel of Jesus Christ is staggering to me.

    23:02-23:03

It is so staggering to me.

    23:03-23:19

Do you understand what's happening in the gospel is that we have rebelled against our creator and God in His holiness is going to pour out His wrath who has rebelled against him.

    23:20-23:29

But in his love through Jesus Christ, God is saving us from his own wrath.

    23:30-23:31

    Isn't that mind blowing?

    23:34-23:46

Jesus reconciled us to God by dying on that cross in our place, taking our sin away and resurrecting to give us eternal life.

    23:46-24:03

But you know what's almost as staggering to me as the gospel is that God has chosen to use us to reach the lost with this message.

    24:07-24:12

That is absolutely staggering to me, that God gave the job to us.

    24:12-24:19

The Bible says we are ambassadors, that we represent Jesus Christ to this world.

    24:21-24:26

Jesus is in heaven, he's coming back, but in the meantime, we are his reps.

    24:29-24:49

And the fact that God is appealing to the world, to these lost people, to come back to him through the provision he made, God's making that appeal, And God says, "I wanna make this appeal through you." It's absolutely staggering.

    24:52-24:59

When we were kids, I have a little brother, seven years younger than me.

    25:00-25:01

Don't tell him I told you this.

    25:06-25:09

But we were little kids, he was really little.

    25:10-25:15

But there was a Christmas play at the Methodist church.

    25:15-25:20

We went to the Methodist church by our house growing up and they had the Christmas play, right?

    25:21-25:23

And the kids all did the Christmas play.

    25:23-25:24

I was in a million of them.

    25:24-25:24

    I was awesome.

    25:25-25:28

    Not really, but I wasn't.

    25:28-25:34

But anyways, this one year, he had one line.

    25:35-25:38

He was supposed to close the whole thing out.

    25:39-25:39

    This was a big deal.

    25:41-25:46

He was supposed to close the whole event out, and here was his line.

    25:47-25:56

"Before we leave, we'd like to wish you "a Merry Christmas in Gaelic." And you're like, why were you wishing a Merry Christmas?

    25:57-25:58

    I don't know, I don't know, it was a long time ago.

    26:00-26:02

But I know for sure that was his line.

    26:03-26:04

Do you know how I know for sure?

    26:06-26:10

Because weeks leading up to it, That was all he said.

    26:11-26:13

He walked around the house all the time.

    26:13-26:16

Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in Gaelic.

    26:16-26:18

Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in Gaelic.

    26:18-26:21

Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in Gaelic.

    26:21-26:23

Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in Gaelic.

    26:23-26:24

    Is that annoying you?

    26:25-26:26

Okay, think of how I felt.

    26:27-26:29

Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in Gaelic.

    26:29-26:31

You got it, okay, you got it!

    26:32-26:33

    Nailed it.

    26:36-26:39

I think you got your line, Robert DeNiro, okay?

    26:39-26:44

"Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in Gaelic." I mean, we were so annoyed.

    26:47-26:48

    Well, the day came.

    26:50-26:51

    Christmas Eve service.

    26:51-26:51

    Picture it.

    26:52-26:55

This little Methodist church, every pew filled.

    26:56-26:59

The overflowed big garage doors that led to the annex were opened.

    26:59-27:00

    All the chairs set up.

    27:00-27:01

    That was filled.

    27:02-27:03

    The place was packed out.

    27:05-27:08

He gets up, closing it out.

    27:08-27:09

    Always a glorious night.

    27:10-27:21

He gets up, steps up to the podium, and he says, "Before we leave, we'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas in stupid."

    27:21-27:22

    (congregation laughing)

    27:27-27:30

On a scale of one to 10, how happy do you think my mother was?

    27:30-27:31

    (congregation laughing)

    27:34-27:35

    No explain-o.

    27:42-27:44

    He had one job.

    27:44-27:45

    He had one job.

    27:48-27:49

Here's the point of the story.

    27:50-27:54

When it mattered, he didn't do it.

    27:59-28:00

    And it mattered.

    28:02-28:06

He didn't communicate what was supposed to be communicated.

    28:10-28:20

Now look, God is trusting you with something much more important than one line in a Christmas play.

    28:22-28:25

God says, "Here, I have the message of salvation in my son.

    28:26-28:28

    Here, go tell people.

    28:29-28:30

Go tell people what I've done for them.

    28:31-28:32

I got this message for you.

    28:32-28:34

    Go, take it, take it.

    28:37-28:40

So how seriously are you taking your responsibility?

    28:44-28:49

Because you're an ambassador of Christ if you're called by his name.

    28:52-28:53

    Church has a mission.

    28:54-28:58

And I gotta tell you, I am so thankful to be a part of a church that gets that.

    28:58-29:18

We have, you know, a group, this life-wise group that's reaching, you know, public school kids, Pine Richland, Vision Appalachia, that our church has been involved in, and Bob Brown has been so faithful, working with Jesse Boggs and that whole ministry.

    29:19-29:21

We got a group going to India to build a church.

    29:24-29:28

We got a couple Thailand trips, one happening in March, We're planning another one for October.

    29:29-29:32

Ben and Mandy Mall's daughter Paige is in the Dominican Republic.

    29:33-29:34

    And there's so many others.

    29:36-29:43

I just love to be a part of a church that's like, they get it, there's a mission, and we're going after that.

    29:44-29:46

And all of these things are important.

    29:46-29:50

And if I left one out, please, it's hard for me to keep track, it really is.

    29:51-29:52

    They're all important.

    29:55-29:58

But evangelism has to start here.

    30:02-30:04

    Evangelism has to start here.

    30:04-30:06

    Yes, go to India.

    30:07-30:07

    Yes, go to Thailand.

    30:08-30:09

    Yes, go to the Dominican.

    30:09-30:12

Yes, but what are we doing here?

    30:13-30:16

Do we care about the people that need the gospel right here?

    30:19-30:21

It has to start with our own people.

    30:21-30:28

And the only way that we're going to be effective is if we all take responsibility.

    30:30-30:31

    How to rescue a stray.

    30:32-30:34

Well, you gotta learn how to recognize him.

    30:34-30:35

You gotta remember what's at stake.

    30:35-30:36

    You gotta take responsibility.

    30:36-30:41

    And then finally, encourage repentance.

    30:45-30:46

    Encourage repentance.

    30:49-30:51

    Look at these verses again.

    30:52-30:54

It says, the end of verse 19, look at that.

    30:54-31:07

It says, "And someone," look at this phrase, "brings him back." That must be important, 'cause he says it again immediately in verse 20.

    31:07-31:07

    Do you see that?

    31:08-31:19

"Let him know that whoever," there it is again, "brings back a sinner "from his wandering will save his soul from death." We talked about that.

    31:20-31:24

and will cover a multitude of sins.

    31:26-31:27

    Encourage repentance.

    31:27-31:35

The goal is to save his soul, right?

    31:35-31:35

    That's salvation.

    31:36-31:40

The goal is to cover sins.

    31:41-31:42

    That's also salvation.

    31:43-31:50

That's them receiving the forgiveness and becoming the new creation in Jesus Christ.

    31:51-31:51

    Again, salvation.

    31:52-31:57

But what I want to focus here on is this bring him back thing, right?

    31:57-32:00

    Because we see it twice.

    32:01-32:04

19, end of 19, beginning of 20, bring back, bring him back.

    32:07-32:08

    Like, what does that mean?

    32:08-32:19

Well, again, that's salvation, but that terminology is specifically focusing on repentance.

    32:23-32:24

    What is repentance?

    32:27-32:31

Repentance is literally changing your mind.

    32:32-32:34

That's what repentance is, changing your mind.

    32:35-32:39

It means, you know, I'm loving my sin.

    32:39-32:41

    I'm enjoying my sin.

    32:41-32:43

Repentance says, no, I'm changing my mind.

    32:43-32:45

    I hate that.

    32:45-32:47

And I want to be done with that.

    32:49-32:50

    That's what repentance is.

    32:50-32:53

It has to start in your mind.

    32:53-32:57

It's turning from your sin and turning to God.

    32:57-33:05

But it has to start in changing your mind about your sin, because when you change your mind about something, your actions will follow.

    33:09-33:13

But when you go after a stray, listen, this is so important.

    33:16-33:18

    You have to encourage repentance.

    33:22-33:24

There is no forgiveness without repentance.

    33:28-33:39

I've been challenging this, I've been challenging people with this, probably my whole ministry, to say, "Show me one verse.

    33:41-33:45

"Show me one verse in the Bible, Old Testament or New Testament, where God offers forgiveness without repentance.

    33:46-33:47

And I'll give you a nickel.

    33:50-33:51

Taylor, do you have a nickel?

    33:52-33:53

    I'm good for it.

    33:54-33:55

But you know, I'm not worried about it.

    33:55-34:00

I'm not gonna have to pay up, because it's not in there.

    34:01-34:03

Nowhere in the Bible does God say, "You know what?

    34:03-34:11

"I will save you, I will transform you, "and I will promise you glory, "and you can just live however you wanna live.

    34:11-34:13

"Go for it." "Just you do you.

    34:14-34:21

"You live however you want, you do you." And you just never see that anywhere in scripture.

    34:25-34:29

Where God says, "I'll forgive you, "and you can just keep your sinful lifestyle too.

    34:29-34:33

"You can have both worlds." I just, I don't see that anywhere in the Bible.

    34:35-34:38

What I do see is we are saved from our sin, we're not saved in our sin.

    34:40-34:48

And you can't have what Christ wants for you if you're holding on to what you want for you.

    34:51-34:55

It's repentance that we're going after.

    34:57-34:59

And that is what you have to want for the stray.

    35:01-35:10

You see, it's not, hey, make sure you bring, she's straying, bring her back to church because we need her in the nursery.

    35:11-35:13

Our rotation's a little off with her not working in the nursery.

    35:14-35:15

That's why we want her back.

    35:15-35:16

    That's not the goal.

    35:18-35:26

It's not, well, we gotta, he's straying, but we need to bring him back because he's the only person on the worship team that knows how to play the oboe.

    35:29-35:30

    I'm fine without the oboe.

    35:33-35:34

    That's not the motivation.

    35:37-35:38

    You have to encourage repentance.

    35:41-35:44

What that means is you gotta bring them the gospel again.

    35:45-35:46

You're like, what do I say?

    35:46-35:48

You need to say this, here's what you say.

    35:51-35:56

Hey, do you believe that Jesus loves you and wants better for you?

    36:00-36:02

    Look, we love you too.

    36:04-36:06

    So come back to harvest.

    36:06-36:09

Come back to small group and let's get on track.

    36:13-36:18

And I know you can't force someone to repent.

    36:20-36:20

    I know that.

    36:22-36:25

Because if there was a way, I'd be doing it.

    36:26-36:28

You can't force someone to repent.

    36:29-36:30

    You can't save anyone.

    36:32-36:33

    It's not your job anyways.

    36:33-36:34

    You push him to Jesus.

    36:35-36:36

    He's the one that saves.

    36:36-36:37

    He's the one that transforms.

    36:42-36:49

But you, what you have to do is to make the effort to bring them the gospel again.

    36:50-36:52

You have to take the initiative.

    36:54-37:00

And look, it might be an uncomfortable conversation that you go after the person.

    37:03-37:04

Like, well, what if it's uncomfortable?

    37:04-37:05

    It might be uncomfortable.

    37:07-37:08

But let me challenge you with this.

    37:08-37:10

What's the absolute worst case scenario?

    37:11-37:12

    You go after a stray.

    37:12-37:14

    What's the worst case scenario?

    37:16-37:25

That they're like, I'm not interested, I'm not coming back, I'm doing what I wanna do, stop bothering me.

    37:31-37:32

    But you tried, right?

    37:35-37:39

And if that's the case, what you say is, "Okay, you know what?

    37:39-37:40

    I'm not going to bother.

    37:40-37:42

I just want you to know that we love you.

    37:45-37:51

And if you ever change your mind, we'll welcome you back with open arms.

    37:56-38:01

And again, you can rest knowing that you tried.

    38:12-38:22

This whole thing is something that, if I can just get personal with you for a second, this is something very near and dear to my heart.

    38:22-38:27

This is something very personal for me because I was astray.

    38:32-38:33

    And it's a long story.

    38:35-38:45

If you want to hear the whole thing, you know, we'll meet up at Pantera Bread and you can toast me a Cinnacrunch bagel and I'll tell you the whole story.

    38:48-38:49

    Here's the short version.

    38:51-38:56

Somebody had shared the gospel with me through the book of James.

    38:59-39:00

    And I realized that I wasn't a Christian.

    39:01-39:10

And I remember being at a crossroads in my life, because now I knew the gospel in a way that I never knew before.

    39:13-39:17

But I still had a sinful lifestyle that I was quite accustomed to.

    39:21-39:36

And I remember this person coming after me, and I said, you know what, I think I'm just gonna go back to, I think I'm just gonna go back to living how I was living.

    39:39-39:41

And I will never forget what they said to me.

    39:44-39:52

They said, Do you have any idea how much God loves you?

    39:54-39:58

And when they said that, I was crushed.

    40:01-40:06

And I thought to myself, I am such a fool.

    40:07-40:23

And I am such a wicked piece of garbage that the God of the universe would send his son to die for me. And I would even entertain the thought of turning my back on Him.

    40:27-40:40

And I'm going to tell you, since those words were spoken, do you have any idea how much God loves you? Since those words were spoken, my life has never been the same.

    40:43-40:48

I'd like you to bow your heads as our worship team makes their way back to the platform.

    40:53-41:00

With your heads bowed, I just want to ask you, who do you know that is straying?

    41:07-41:09

Who is God putting on your heart right now?

    41:11-41:19

Maybe it's somebody used to sit near you here in church, maybe it's somebody that was in your small group or your fisherman group, precepts, mom to mom, whatever.

    41:21-41:34

But who do you know that seemed to be pursuing Christ and walked away and has been avoiding fellowship?

    41:36-41:37

    Who is that person?

    41:41-41:45

What I want you to do is write their name on your outline somewhere.

    41:45-41:51

You can write their initials, write their name, just write something.

    41:56-41:56

    Write their name down.

    42:02-42:15

And today, not tomorrow, not next week, today, today, reach out to them with the love of God.

    42:20-42:29

Shoot them a text, give them a call, stop by their house, rescue a stray.

    42:31-42:32

    Let's pray.

    42:33-42:47

Father in heaven, your word just so clearly commands us to be watching each other's backs, even people who don't want their backs to be watched.

    42:49-42:52

But it is the love of Jesus Christ that compels us.

    42:53-42:56

It is your gospel that moves us.

    43:02-43:07

So Father, I pray that we would be a church that makes the effort.

    43:08-43:11

And it's so hard to keep track.

    43:19-43:21

But that's why you've called us all to do it.

    43:23-43:33

This responsibility doesn't rest on a couple of leaders, but your word is very clear, Father, that you have called us all to rescue strays.

    43:35-43:57

Father, I pray today that you would motivate us, that this portion of your word would burn in our hearts and minds that we wouldn't be able to rest until we reached out to that person that we know that we're supposed to reach out to.

    44:02-44:06

Glorify your name through your people, Father, we ask in Jesus' name, amen.

James chapter 5. Are you there? Let's bow our heads. I'm going to ask that you would please pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's Word and I will pray for you to have a heart open ready to receive it. All right, let's just take a moment and pray. Father in heaven, we come to your Word. I pray that you would Give us the faith that we need to actually believe what you said to the point that it makes a difference in the way that we live.

    01:30-01:41

Your Holy Spirit has a way of taking your Word and making perfect application, bringing conviction and bringing the change that we need.

    01:42-01:53

And Father, I pray that that's exactly what happens to those in this room, those who will be joining us later, those who will be watching this stream or listening to the podcast later.

    01:53-01:59

I just ask, Father, that you are exalted and glorified over all.

    02:02-02:04

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

    02:07-02:08

James chapter 5, are you there?

    02:10-02:15

Imagine that I move away and I send a letter to the church.

    02:17-02:20

And Pastor Taylor gets up and he says, "Hey, we got a letter from Jeff.

    02:20-02:23

I'm going to tell you what he has to say." and he opens up the letter.

    02:25-02:39

Instead of like reading the whole letter, he just flips it over and says, Jeff says, "He is such a big baby." And then Taylor's like, "What do you think he meant by that?

    02:41-02:46

"He is such a big baby." And somebody would say, "Oh, he has a, him and Aaron have these friends.

    02:46-02:49

"They just had a 10 and a half pound infant.

    02:50-02:51

    "That's what he's talking about.

    02:51-02:54

he's such a big baby." Somebody else was like, "No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

    02:54-02:55

No, he's not talking about that.

    02:55-03:10

He's talking about he has, they have boxers And somebody else would say, "No, no, no, no, no, no.

    03:10-03:15

That's not what he's talking about at all." Jeff worked with this guy.

    03:15-03:18

They woulda tease him and stuff and he'd always boo-hoo and cry.

    03:18-03:26

And he's like, "Oh, he's such a big baby." And could it mean any of those?

    03:27-03:29

    Sure, it could.

    03:30-03:32

Could it mean all three of those things at the same time?

    03:34-03:41

No, because we're talking about an infant, we're talking about a dog, and we're talking about a man.

    03:42-03:43

    So how do you know?

    03:45-03:46

How do you know what the big baby is?

    03:48-03:52

Well, you take the letter and you read that statement and it's context, right?

    03:53-03:55

It says here, "Our dogs are doing great.

    03:56-03:59

"Lou is 80 pounds, but still loves to climb on my lap.

    04:00-04:05

"He is such a big baby." Oh, okay, now we know what the big baby is.

    04:07-04:13

And you're like, "Yes, we do, "but I don't know why you're telling us this." Because that's how some people read the Bible.

    04:15-05:15

They just kind of pull a verse out make it mean what I think it means, but you can't do that. You have to understand the meaning of the passage in its context to understand what is actually being said. That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel we preach through books of the Bible so that we get the context. But there's another reason that I'm telling you this. We're getting to a passage today that's about prayer and healing and this passage is so often taken out of context and it leaves people feeling disappointed by God. Some people look at this passage and say, "Look, this passage guarantees healing from diseases.

    05:18-05:19

    And it really doesn't.

    05:22-05:35

Because the context of the passage, and if you've been with us as we've been going through, James, he's been talking about spiritual suffering is what he's been talking about throughout chapter five over and over and over.

    05:35-05:37

He's like, be patient, be patient, be patient.

    05:37-05:40

He's talking about people that are spiritually suffering.

    05:40-05:44

He says, look at Job's example in suffering and in patience.

    05:44-05:50

And this passage that we're looking at today, please hear me because this is so important.

    05:51-05:54

This passage isn't about physical suffering.

    05:55-05:58

As much as it's about spiritual suffering.

    05:59-06:03

Talking about weakness, talking about depression.

    06:06-06:16

And that's actually much more relevant for us, Because I can tell you as a pastor, there are more people in the church that are afflicted by spiritual suffering than physical.

    06:20-06:31

Because church, despite us knowing our Bibles, despite us having good theology, sometimes we get overwhelmed with trials in life.

    06:33-06:35

    Maybe it's a relationship problem.

    06:36-06:39

Or maybe you're just going through a season of discouragement.

    06:41-06:44

Maybe you're just flat out dealing with depression.

    06:45-06:49

Look, maybe it's because of something you've done.

    06:49-06:52

Maybe it's because of something somebody else did to you.

    06:55-06:58

But that's the topic on the table here.

    06:59-07:02

Is what do you do when trials have you beat down?

    07:05-07:11

Right, that's the context of the passage, what do you do when trials have you beat down, the answer is prayer.

    07:13-07:13

    And there's a guarantee.

    07:15-07:16

    To have your prayers answered.

    07:18-07:19

    When you're spiritually weak.

    07:21-07:24

So on your outline, how does he prayer answered?

    07:26-07:27

    How does he prayer answered?

    07:31-07:34

Number one, make prayer the norm.

    07:36-07:37

    Look at verse 13.

    07:38-07:45

He says, "Is anyone among you suffering?" Let him pray.

    07:46-07:50

"Is anyone cheerful?" Let him sing praise.

    07:52-07:57

Now that word for suffering here in verse 13, It's the same word he uses in verse 10.

    07:57-08:02

He's talking about the spiritual suffering that the prophets had to endure.

    08:03-08:08

And he says, when you're suffering, when you're spiritually beat down, he says, pray.

    08:13-08:23

Now, the problem with us, especially those of us that have been around the church for any length of time, sometimes that just seems trite.

    08:25-08:27

"Oh, you're just going to tell me to pray." Yes.

    08:29-08:30

    And it's not trite.

    08:32-08:37

Because here's the thing, if you're having a problem with your back, go see the chiropractor, right?

    08:37-08:41

If you're having a problem with your tooth, go see the dentist, right?

    08:42-08:46

If you're having a problem with your soul, there's only one person who can fix that.

    08:48-08:49

    And that's God Himself.

    08:52-09:05

Then He says also here, He goes, "Are you cheerful?" That word literally means, "Are you well feeling?" He says, "If you're feeling good," he goes, "then praise." And that's really a form of prayer, isn't it?

    09:06-09:08

    It's all communication with God.

    09:10-09:15

If you're in a good season in life, let God know that you love Him.

    09:16-09:17

Let God know that you trust Him.

    09:18-09:20

Tell God how thankful you are for everything.

    09:23-09:28

All right, so really in verse 13, he's just, he says all the bases are covered.

    09:28-09:29

    Is your soul suffering?

    09:30-09:31

    He says, pray.

    09:31-09:32

Are you in a good place?

    09:36-09:36

    Then praise.

    09:38-09:42

In church, prayer is so much more than giving God the wishlist.

    09:43-09:45

That's how some people view prayer.

    09:45-09:50

And that's why some people are disappointed by prayer, is they view God as Santa Claus.

    09:51-09:57

I just, I have my list and I just show up and I tell God, this is, okay, here's the stuff that I want.

    10:00-10:01

    He's not Santa Claus.

    10:01-10:03

Some people view God as a vending machine.

    10:04-10:06

It's just a purely transactional thing.

    10:06-10:08

I just tell God what I want.

    10:08-10:13

I push a couple of buttons and he gives me what I want.

    10:14-10:17

Look, God's not a vending machine.

    10:18-10:27

    You study your Bibles, people, the Bible says he's a person, he's a father, he's a king, he's a shepherd, he's a counselor.

    10:29-10:33

You see, prayer is so much more than just giving God the to-do list.

    10:36-10:41

Prayer first and foremost is about the relationship with God that he's provided through Jesus Christ.

    10:41-10:43

    It's about the relationship.

    10:46-10:49

I think sometimes we miss that because we have such a small view of prayer.

    10:52-10:53

    God's after the relationship.

    10:55-10:57

You know, think like, in terms of marriage.

    11:00-11:03

Imagine if the only time I talked to my wife was when I wanted something.

    11:05-11:06

    Imagine that.

    11:08-11:24

I come home and I'm like, "Hungry, I want food." And then after I eat, I'm like, "Thirsty, want drink." She gets me a drink.

    11:25-11:26

    I sit on the couch.

    11:27-11:41

I'm like, "Change channel, don't want to watch Family Feud." But I have much of a relationship with my wife if that was the interaction that I had with her.

    11:42-11:54

And I know some of you are like, "You wouldn't have much of a relationship with her and Pastor Jeff I know your wife, you also wouldn't have very many teeth if you talk to your wife that way." And that's true.

    11:56-11:59

But for some people that's how they view prayer.

    11:59-12:12

I said, "Okay, God, this is the time that I get down "and tell you all the stuff that I want." When was the last time that you prayed just to give thanks to God?

    12:15-12:26

When was the last time that you just prayed prayers of worship, praise, for who God is?

    12:27-12:30

When was the last time you prayed, God, I just wanna be close to you.

    12:30-12:35

That's all I'm asking for, is let me know your abiding presence by your Holy Spirit.

    12:35-12:37

God, I know you're with me.

    12:37-12:42

God, please let me experience that and live that and believe that.

    12:43-12:46

When was the last time you prayed something like that?

    12:51-12:53

Now, listen, I don't want anybody to misunderstand me.

    12:53-12:59

Yes, absolutely, we should make our requests known to God.

    13:00-13:00

    Absolutely.

    13:04-13:10

But if that's how you view prayer, I want to encourage you this morning to get a bigger view.

    13:12-13:26

And if you commit yourself to making prayer more than the occasional check-in or your grocery list of once, you're gonna have eyes to see God at work all over the place because you're constantly aware of His abiding presence.

    13:28-13:33

That's why Paul says in 1 Thessalonians 5, 17, pray without ceasing.

    13:35-13:45

You need to see prayer as constant communication with your heavenly Father, not this occasional event that I try to squeeze into my day.

    13:46-13:52

Make prayer the norm, and you're gonna see God's hand at work everywhere in your life.

    13:54-13:55

    How does he pray?

    13:55-14:35

make prayer the norm and you're like okay Pastor Jeff that's all well and good but you know what we're talking about suffering here and quite honestly I just I'm having a really hard time praying right now. Okay well if that's you then let's let's move on to number two. How does he prayer answered? Call for help. Call for help. Look at verse 14 he says is anyone among you sick? Let him "Call for the elders of the church "and let them pray over him, "anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord." Oh, this is a part that gets misunderstood a lot.

    14:36-14:46

Some people read this and say, "Okay, so this is saying if you have a disease, "you call the elders and then they heal you." And that's really not what this verse is talking about.

    14:47-15:01

Again, I don't wanna be misunderstood 'cause somebody right now is like, "Pastor Jeff doesn't believe that God heals diseases." I actually in my notes had a list of like people and incidences from our church where we saw God heal.

    15:01-15:03

And I had to cut that out because it was gonna take way too much time.

    15:04-15:13

I have seen God directly heal people in my family, in the church so many times over the past 20 some years, so many times.

    15:16-15:19

Buy me Chick-fil-A sometime and we'll sit down and I'll tell you about them.

    15:20-15:21

I just don't have time today.

    15:22-15:23

    But I do believe that.

    15:25-15:28

But that's not the subject of this passage.

    15:29-15:33

See, the word sick here, is anyone among you sick?

    15:33-15:39

The word sick literally in the Greek means opposite of powerful.

    15:41-15:43

It's talking about somebody who's weak or feeble.

    15:45-15:55

In fact, they found this word in secular Greek, And it was used to describe a soldier who was worn out from being in too many battles.

    15:56-16:02

So the word sick doesn't really mean you have cancer or COVID.

    16:04-16:06

It means that you're just spiritually worn out.

    16:07-16:08

You're at the end of your rope.

    16:09-16:17

So much so, that you, you're like, I just, I can't, I can't pray right now.

    16:19-16:22

And if we're gonna be totally honest, I really don't wanna pray right now.

    16:22-16:24

    I just don't, I'm not there.

    16:26-16:27

    I just don't want to.

    16:30-16:39

So what he's saying here is, listen, if you feel like you're at the place in your life where you're so weak that you can't pray like you know you should, what should you do?

    16:39-16:40

    He says, call the elders.

    16:42-16:43

That's what you do, call the elders.

    16:43-16:45

By the way, that's our primary job.

    16:47-16:54

more than counseling, more than meetings, more than updating the website.

    16:54-17:00

Our primary job as church leaders is to pray.

    17:02-17:08

So James would say, look, if you're weak, you need somebody to pray over you, so get a guy who gets prayer.

    17:08-17:08

    That's what he's saying.

    17:09-17:13

Get the guy who gets prayer and get him to pray over you.

    17:17-17:33

When my son was younger, let's just say I got a lot of experience in my life on clogging toilets because my son flushed everything.

    17:36-17:40

And I just didn't have the coin to call the plumber every time.

    17:41-17:42

    I learned.

    17:42-17:45

And you buy the plumbing stuff at the hardware store.

    17:45-17:52

You know, you buy the snake and all these little contraptions and pumps and ropes and pulleys and all these things.

    17:54-17:56

But I've unplugged a lot of toilets in my time.

    17:57-18:06

And I kind of get, you know, like, if you're little and you don't really understand how it works and what it's for, it does kind of look like a porcelain wishing well.

    18:09-18:11

But I've unplugged so many things.

    18:11-18:15

Do you know the hardest thing I've ever gotten out of our pipes?

    18:16-18:17

    Slinky.

    18:20-18:26

That took like literally days of just going back to it, working on it a half hour, going back to it.

    18:26-18:26

    Yeah.

    18:28-18:31

I've spent more time in our pipes than like Super Mario.

    18:31-18:41

I mean, but there have been times that My little Home Depot tools couldn't do the job.

    18:42-18:46

And there was a season in our life where I had our plumber on speed dial.

    18:47-18:48

    His name's Ray.

    18:51-18:52

    And he would come.

    18:53-18:55

The one time in particular, I tried and tried and tried.

    18:55-18:57

    I can't figure out what's going on.

    18:57-19:06

And he comes with his van, and he pulls out this giant-- it's like a plumbing snake, but it's hooked up to some giant machine.

    19:06-19:07

    So it's just like, brrrrr.

    19:09-19:10

    Ray hooked this thing up.

    19:11-19:20

And you know those candy, the Gushers, those little gummy candies where you bite into them and you get the squirt of the fruity toothpaste or whatever?

    19:21-19:26

Well, Owen ate a whole box of those and flushed all the wrappers at the same time.

    19:28-19:29

And you're like, why are you telling us this?

    19:30-19:32

And I can't remember why I was supposed to tell you this.

    19:34-19:35

    Oh yeah, I remember.

    19:36-19:37

    The point is this.

    19:40-19:55

I got to a place so often in plumbing where it was just-- I was swinging above my weight class, and I needed to call in the pros to do what I wasn't able to do.

    19:56-19:58

And really, that's what James is saying here.

    19:58-20:03

When you're at the place in your life that you're like, I can't-- I just can't pray.

    20:03-20:06

I'm so weak right now, I can't do it.

    20:06-20:07

    It's the same principle.

    20:07-20:09

He says, call in the big guns.

    20:10-20:11

    Call in the big guns.

    20:14-20:24

But going on, he says, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

    20:28-20:30

Let's talk about anointing with oil.

    20:32-20:33

    Like, what does that mean?

    20:36-20:40

Well, I've spent a lot of time studying this, a lot.

    20:41-20:47

Not just this past week, the elders actually did a deep dive on this many years ago.

    20:48-20:51

What does this mean, anoint with oil?

    20:53-20:59

Well, you take a trip through the Bible and you see all kinds of things with the oil, right?

    21:00-21:05

Like you can go to the Old Testament and see King Saul, he was anointed king.

    21:07-21:11

Then you go to Matthew chapter 26, Jesus was anointed.

    21:11-21:15

And sometimes it looks like anointing with oil is symbolic.

    21:17-21:21

And I've heard people say, well, anointing with oil, that's just a symbol of the Holy Spirit.

    21:21-21:25

That's all it is, it's purely symbolic, like communion, like baptism.

    21:26-21:28

It's the same kind of thing, it's purely symbolic.

    21:30-21:33

Well, keep studying in your Bible.

    21:33-21:38

You also see the guests would often be anointed, right?

    21:38-21:41

Like Psalm 23, you anoint my head with oil, right?

    21:41-21:45

And it was a matter of comfort, right?

    21:45-21:50

And some people say, well, that's what James is saying here is the elders should seek to refresh somebody.

    21:50-21:52

Like somebody who's like beat down and weak.

    21:52-21:57

It's the elder's job to sort of, you know, pep them up, right?

    22:00-22:03

Some people say, "No, no, this is topical relief, right?

    22:03-22:07

"This is like medicinal." Because sometimes oil was used that way.

    22:08-22:11

You know the story that Jesus told about the good Samaritan?

    22:12-22:13

    That's what he did.

    22:14-22:17

When he found the man beat up, he anointed him with oil.

    22:17-22:18

    It was medicinal.

    22:19-22:21

And some people say that's what he's talking about here.

    22:21-22:28

It's purely, you know, he's saying elders, Pray over them, yes, but also use medicine.

    22:30-22:36

But then we go to Mark 6 in verse 13, we see that the apostles anointed with oil as they healed people.

    22:41-22:46

And you're like, all right, so that's what the Bible says about anointing, but what is it here?

    22:49-22:51

I think you can make a case for any of them.

    22:53-23:02

Like, well, Jeff, when somebody comes to you and asks for anointing with oil, do you do it or do you not do it?

    23:02-23:04

And here's the answer, I always have.

    23:06-23:09

And I always will, if somebody comes to request that.

    23:09-23:12

Because I see it as an act of faith.

    23:13-23:18

The person that comes and they're at the point, they're like, hey, can you anoint me with oil and pray for me?

    23:19-23:20

    They're crying out in faith.

    23:22-23:22

    So I do it.

    23:24-23:26

But there's a promise attached to it.

    23:26-23:27

    Look at verse 15.

    23:28-23:37

He says, "And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up." There's the refreshing.

    23:37-23:41

When you pray over someone who's weak, the Lord will refresh them.

    23:42-23:45

He'll awaken them, and I've seen that countless times.

    23:47-23:48

    That's the promise to answer.

    23:51-23:56

Because you see, the power is not in the oil, and the power is not in the elder.

    23:58-24:00

The power of prayer is from God himself.

    24:02-24:19

He goes on, he says, "And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven." If, by the way, for people that think any time you're suffering it's because you're sinning and God's, you know, hitting you with the whammy, that's not the case at all.

    24:19-24:26

He says, "If." Sometimes your problem is your own sin, but sometimes, as we said earlier, your problem is other people's sin.

    24:29-24:36

But he says, "If, if he has committed sins," and here he's talking about people who are spiritually weak.

    24:37-24:41

You know, when you're in that state, you're susceptible to doing things that you know that you shouldn't do.

    24:43-24:45

You are prone to sin when you're weak.

    24:47-24:53

Complaining, doubting, fighting, being lazy, maybe going back to some addiction.

    24:57-25:01

He says, you know, somebody in that state needs reminded of what Jesus Christ has done.

    25:03-25:06

They need reminded of our identity in Christ.

    25:06-25:10

And God is going to cleanse whatever in your heart needs cleansed.

    25:13-25:15

So we've all been to the place in our walks.

    25:19-25:21

    where we just can't pray.

    25:25-25:29

James says, "Get help from people who can." Right?

    25:30-25:30

    How does he pray?

    25:31-25:33

Answered, make it the norm, call for help.

    25:33-25:37

Number three, oh, speaking of sin, deal with sin openly.

    25:38-25:39

    Look at verse 16.

    25:40-25:46

He says, "Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed.

    25:49-25:56

You want to see prayer answered, you want to be recharged in your walk with God, well, then you've got to deal with sin.

    25:58-26:04

Because when it comes to prayer, so often what's what's most on our hearts and what's most on God's heart.

    26:07-26:09

    Not always the same thing.

    26:11-26:12

    Here's what I mean.

    26:13-26:17

For some people, they're like, God, I really want this job.

    26:18-26:19

And that's what I'm praying for, God.

    26:19-26:21

I want this job, I want this job.

    26:21-26:25

Meanwhile, God's saying, I want you free from that addiction.

    26:28-26:30

That's the thing that's dominating your life right now.

    26:31-26:35

Or we're like, God, I just, God, I just wanna get married.

    26:35-26:39

God, put the right person in my life because I just wanna get married.

    26:40-26:56

And meanwhile, God says, "No, I want you free from idolatry because that's where you are right now." We're so often like, "God, this is what I'm praying for.

    26:56-26:58

This is the thing." And God's like, "No, wait, wait, wait.

    26:59-27:02

You have a sin that's a much bigger issue.

    27:03-27:09

Are we just gonna ignore that?" You see the point?

    27:10-27:16

Sometimes I think God wants to deal with something that we're not wanting to deal with.

    27:21-27:22

We've got to deal with sin.

    27:23-27:24

We've got to deal with sin.

    27:27-27:28

He says we need to confess to one another.

    27:30-27:31

    Confess to one another.

    27:32-27:33

    Like, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.

    27:34-27:35

    That's uncomfortable.

    27:35-27:37

Why can't I just confess to God?

    27:40-27:41

    Well, lots of reasons.

    27:41-27:43

    How about accountability?

    27:44-27:48

How about sin wants to hide, right?

    27:49-27:50

That's just the way sin is.

    27:50-27:52

Remember, Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve sinned.

    27:52-27:54

What was the first thing they did?

    27:55-27:59

After covering themselves, they went and they hid from God.

    28:00-28:01

    That's how sin is.

    28:05-28:13

And if you want to defeat sin, that means you've got to grab it by the seat of the pants and the scruff of its miserable neck and drag it out into the open.

    28:14-28:15

    Hey, we're dealing with this.

    28:16-28:18

But you've got to drag it out.

    28:20-28:23

That's why we confess to one another, get the whole church involved.

    28:24-28:28

Get the elders, yes, get your ministry team leader, get your small group leader.

    28:29-28:36

Let this be a community where we deal with sin and not just pretend that it's not happening.

    28:37-28:50

The worst thing you can do if you're struggling with sin, the worst thing you can do is the natural tendency of most people, and that's to isolate, run and hide.

    28:50-28:51

    Oh, you know what?

    28:51-29:03

I'm just gonna stream from home, not because of health reasons, but because there's a sin thing that I know God wants to deal with, and just quite frankly, I just don't wanna deal with it.

    29:07-29:09

And you're like, man, that's easier said than done, Jeff.

    29:10-29:14

I really don't want people, I don't want people to know how I'm struggling.

    29:15-29:20

And I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that I'm the worst sinner that I know.

    29:25-29:26

In fact, my sin was so bad.

    29:27-29:28

You know how bad my sin was?

    29:30-29:37

My sin was so bad that it took the death of the sinless son of God to pay the penalty for my sin.

    29:37-29:38

That's how horrible my sin is.

    29:43-29:49

And if you think you're the only one struggling with whatever sin it is that you're struggling with.

    29:52-29:54

    You're deceiving yourself.

    29:55-30:01

It takes incredible humility to open up about sin.

    30:03-30:06

But as we've already learned from James, we're called to humble ourselves.

    30:08-30:11

Look at verse 15 again, I'm sorry, 16.

    30:14-30:31

He says, "The prayer of a righteous person "has great power as it is working." So if you're weak, if you're struggling, he says, hey, there's real power on display when a righteous person prays.

    30:31-30:32

    Do you believe that?

    30:33-30:34

    Do you believe that?

    30:35-30:38

I hope so because number four is believe that prayer works.

    30:40-30:41

    Believe that prayer works.

    30:44-30:51

He says, Elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed fervently that it might not rain.

    30:52-30:55

And for three years and six months, it did not rain on the earth.

    30:56-31:02

Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

    31:06-31:10

You see, previous passage, he says the prayer of a righteous person has power.

    31:12-31:18

And I think we look at that, and we get all humble, and we say, well, the prayer of a righteous person.

    31:18-31:22

Yeah, I don't know if I'd put myself in this category.

    31:22-31:26

I don't really think, I don't really think, Jeff, that I'm anything special.

    31:27-31:28

    And I would say, good.

    31:29-31:32

I'm glad you think that because you're not.

    31:34-31:36

But that's not a requirement for prayer to work.

    31:40-31:42

That's one of the reasons he mentioned Elijah.

    31:43-31:45

Elijah was a normal guy, right?

    31:45-31:46

    Read his story.

    31:47-31:47

    He suffered.

    31:49-31:49

    He was fearful.

    31:51-31:52

    He battled depression.

    31:53-31:58

He got completely worn out, but he prayed.

    32:02-32:13

You know, we tend, just like the Jews that would have received this correspondence from James, we tend to sort of romanticize and idealize these Old Testament people.

    32:16-32:23

We're like, "Man, you know, people like Elijah, he was awesome!" And no, no he wasn't.

    32:26-32:27

    His God was.

    32:28-32:32

    His God is awesome.

    32:34-32:35

    And that's the point here.

    32:35-32:39

Elijah's God is the one with the power.

    32:39-32:43

And you can pray to the same God.

    32:47-32:53

This is another reason I believe this passage isn't primarily speaking about physical healing.

    32:53-33:00

Because if that was what James was talking about, was healing from diseases, he could have used a lot of examples from Elijah.

    33:01-33:05

He could have used examples from other people in the Old Testament to illustrate that.

    33:07-33:10

But instead, look at the analogy he gives.

    33:11-33:21

A dry, parched land, receiving rain, resulting in fruitfulness.

    33:25-33:26

    That's James' analogy here.

    33:26-33:31

When you're spiritually weak, when you're spiritually dry, you aren't fruitful.

    33:34-33:43

But prayer brings refreshment from God, bringing you back to life and once again, fruitful for ministry.

    33:47-33:49

He said, "Do I believe that prayer works?

    33:50-33:51

    I absolutely do.

    33:55-34:01

Not because I'm anything special, but because God is powerful.

    34:03-34:10

And He has promised to refresh those who are weak and who will cry out to Him.

    34:11-34:15

Our worship team would make their way back to the platform.

    34:15-34:18

I just want to ask you, would you just bow your heads?

    34:23-34:24

Let's just take a moment here.

    34:28-34:35

Let me ask you, are you in a place right now where you're worn out?

    34:38-34:41

Are you in a place in your life right now where you feel beat down?

    34:47-34:49

God wants to restore your joy.

    34:55-34:56

But are you willing to pray?

    34:58-35:14

I don't just mean say your prayers or go through a list, and the list is important, but to go beyond that, to say, "God, I'm not just going to read you a list of sick people, but I want to tell you what's on my heart.

    35:14-35:24

Are you willing to do that?" If you're like, "You know what, Jeff, I don't think I can right now.

    35:24-35:28

I'm just not there." Well, then are you willing to call for help?

    35:33-35:50

And if there is sin in your life, if the circumstances of life have just gotten you to the point that you're just like, "I don't care!" Are you willing to deal with the sin?

    35:56-36:07

Are you willing to believe that there's power in prayer because you're praying to a powerful God?

    36:11-36:15

And if you're like, yeah, you know what, Jeff?

    36:15-36:16

    Yeah, I am there.

    36:16-36:24

I am there and I am willing, then I would say, well, according to the promise of God's word, you're going to see prayer answered.

    36:25-36:26

    So let's get to it.

    36:28-36:39

Father in heaven, we've all been there.

    36:39-36:43

In fact, some of our Christian brothers and sisters are there right now.

    36:44-36:45

    Just weak, just worn out.

    36:46-37:17

been fighting too hard and too long. Don't see end in sight. Just despondent and discouraged and depressed. Father, we've all been there. And Father, we confess to you that our tendency is to run from you. To run from the church, to run from our brothers and sisters. And that's the worst thing we can do, Father.

    37:17-37:32

I pray that You would draw us to You. You would draw us to Your people. And that we would experience the kind of refreshment that You promised here in this passage.

    37:36-38:08

Like a land that hasn't received rain in three and a half years, suddenly drinking in the rain. Father, I pray that you would give us the faith. I pray, Father, that you would give us the humility, that we're willing to do business with you the way that you've called us to. Pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read James 5:13-18

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think most of our prayer requests are about physical needs, and relatively few are about spiritual needs?

  3. Why does James instruct us to call on church leaders for prayer (Jas 5:14)? What do you think is the purpose of the oil?

  4. How would you respond to someone who says “I tried praying - and it didn’t work.”?

  5. What was the point of the Elijah illustration (Jas 5:17-18)? What does this teach us about answered prayer in our lives?

Intentional Faith: A "How To" Guide - How to Tell the Truth

Introduction:

If I'm Going to Tell the Truth: (James 5:12)

  1. I must understand Truth is the highest priority .
  2. I must stop Seaking Deceptively .

    Matthew 5:33-37

    Matthew 23:16-19

  3. I must speak Honestly .
  4. I must reckon with the Consequences for lying .

    Matthew 5:34-37

  5. I must do What is true .

Colossians 3:9 - Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices.

Ephesians 4:25 - Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

Matthew 7:12 - So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

1 John 2:3-6 - And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.

  • 00:40-00:45

Good morning, beloved. We are coming to the end of our study in the book of James.

    00:47-00:52

So if you would turn to James chapter 5, that's where we're going to pick up at verse 12.

    00:53-01:04

If you don't have a Bible with you, there's one in the seat back. We know the print is kind of small, but it is a step up from the entire scripture engraved on a grain of rice.

    01:05-01:17

And we do have more large print Bibles in the back, the hardbound ones back there, so feel free to go back and get one of the larger print versions.

    01:20-01:31

All right, I hope you're all there at James chapter 5, and as we kind of customarily do, if you would pray for me, and I will pray for you. Let's pray.

    01:34-01:55

Oh gracious Father, it's somewhat ironic to me that you would appoint an inveterate liar like me to preach a sermon on the truth, but we must preach your truth.

    01:57-02:05

Father, you and I have talked almost every day about what this sermon would be.

    02:08-02:18

And I pray that we hear not my words, but only your word. For your word is truth.

    02:19-02:23

Your word gives life. Your word sanctifies us.

    02:25-02:31

And I pray, Lord, in every heart this morning, you would plant your word deeply.

    02:34-02:54

Give everyone listening, whether here in person or watching from home or on their computer, Father, plant your truth deep within us, that we may know truth in our inmost parts.

    02:55-03:00

We ask in the great name of our Savior Jesus. Amen.

    03:02-03:45

So James chapter 5 verse 12, we have a single verse this morning, "But above all my brothers, do not swear either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your yes be yes and your no be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. We live in a culture so awash in lies it is nearly impossible to know what is true. Advertisers claim that using their product it will vastly improve your life. The media outlets and the talk shows and the view, they will spin events and use words to promote the agenda they want you to believe.

    03:47-04:08

Celebrities and politicians issue apologies worded so carefully they do not acknowledge responsibility and they don't even actually apologize. And of course politicians, they will say anything and everything to get votes and to demonize and destroy their opponents and agitate their electoral base.

    04:10-04:21

We're told the economy's doing great, the border's secure, the climate crisis and white heterosexual males, greatest threats to human existence right now.

    04:22-04:27

Men can be birthing people, but killing a pre-born child, that's an act of love.

    04:29-04:32

The scientific data says stay six feet apart.

    04:33-04:35

And the riots have been mostly peaceful.

    04:37-04:41

And in case you hadn't heard, the Secretary of Defense has been working from home.

    04:43-04:45

    The list is endless.

    04:46-05:02

White lies, fibs, half-truths, exaggeration, spin, evasion, partial disclosure, concealment, bluffing, deception, hypocrisy, bald-faced, outrageous lies saturate every level and aspect of our culture.

    05:05-05:11

And it's all designed to manipulate and to mislead and manage you in some way.

    05:12-05:19

We almost expect to be lied to and maybe we think at some level it's okay for us to lie.

    05:20-06:44

We may not give what we say a whole lot of thought. We might be kind of careless with our words and we may not even recognize we're lying. And you know we only get upset about it when someone lies to us, when those lies affect us personally. I was once involved in a lawsuit over a government contract and I was representing the US Army. The Army had canceled the contract because the company had basically failed to perform over two and a half years. And throughout the contract performance the Army's contracting officer and the government inspectors had a very difficult time getting straight answers out of the two brothers who owned the company. Now the brothers were Hasidic Jews and you might ask well how did a couple of Hasidic Jews get a government contract? That's a long story I can tell you afterwards if you're interested, but these two brothers had all kinds of excuses for why they were unable to perform the contract. Well during the time the army was trying to get them to perform, one of the government inspectors confronted one of the brothers about, shall we say, his unreliable answers, and the brother responded, "John, I would never lie to you.

    06:44-07:28

I may mislead you, I may deceive you, I may conceal things from you, but I would never lie to you." And now a story about making, you know, fine distinctions about the truth might be kind of amusing, but if we examine ourselves as we're going to do this morning, we will realize we're not a whole lot different. But we're supposed to be different. We are supposed to be truthful, we are called to be truthful. As disciples of Christ, we are to put away falsehood and speak the truth to one another. That is what James 5.12 is all about, how to tell the truth.

    07:29-10:38

So, if I'm going to tell the truth, I must understand that truth is the highest priority. James begins, "But above all, my brothers." Just a quick note, "brothers" there, the Greek word can be "brothers" and "sisters." It's not just the the male believers. He says, "But above all, my brothers and sisters." So let's stop there. What James is about to say must be important. The Greek rendered "above all" means above and before. It is the first thing, the main thing, and it applies to all of us. James uses the phrase "therefore" in his letter six times and he says things like, "Know this, listen my brothers, and behold." So he's emphasized things before, but what is different about this verse? And is it connected to that he just said, say the verses we spoke about last week? Is it connected to anything else in his letter? It seems to me that this is the capstone of his whole letter. It sums up and emphasizes all of his points so far. Have you noticed in this series, in the letter actually, have you noticed in James' letter how frequently James emphasizes speaking, usually as a source of sin and problems, and relationship conflict. It's not just the passages on the tongue either. So I'm not I'm not going to review all the sermons that have been preached but I encourage you when you read James to note how often he uses words like ask, say, boast, speak, grumble, and mouth. James is very interested in how we talk. This reveals what is in our hearts. What we say reveals what we think of God and what we think of other people. As James begins to sum up his letter, he practically shouts it, "But above all, my brothers and sisters, this is the highest priority of the Christian life. This is the main thing for you to know." So we had better pay attention to this main thing. Well, what is that main thing? He says, "Do not swear either by heaven or by earth or any other oath." So if I'm going to tell the truth, I must stop speaking deceptively. And when James says, "Do not swear," he's not talking about cussing and using bad words, although we should certainly stop swearing in that way too. James is talking about swearing that involves making a promise to do something and then confirming that promise with an oath appealing to a higher authority, meaning that there will be consequences for breaking my promise.

    10:42-14:01

James' brother Jesus also preached on swearing in the Sermon on the Mount, and chapter 5, verses 33 through 37. "Again, you have heard it was said to those of old, 'You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.' But I say to you, do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king and do not take an oath by your head for you cannot make one hair white or black let what you say simply be yes or no anything more than this comes from evil the old covenant did not prevent swearing an oath or prohibit swearing an oath and often making a sincere oath and keeping it was considered a righteous thing to do. Yet both James and Jesus tell us, "Do not swear at all." Why? Well, it's likely because of the way people at the time made oaths. They were swearing falsely and deceptively. They were doing it in a way that left a loophole or gave them a way out. In short, they wanted to be able to weasel out of their promises that they made. Let's look for a moment at how oaths were taken in first century Israel. The Jews were to take their oaths only in the name of God, Yahweh, but any sensible Jew who had little or no intention of keeping a promise is not going to take an oath in the name of Yahweh because doing so would most certainly call down judgment from heaven on his head when he broke his oath. So people supposed they could swear by something else, something less, that still sounded weighty, like the throne rather than the name of God. The Jews had developed such a sophisticated system of swearing oaths that Jesus criticized the lawyers and religious leaders who enforced it. Let's look at Matthew chapter 23. Jesus says, "Woe to you blind guides who say, 'If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath. You blind fools, which is greater, the gold of the temple, that has made the gold sacred?" Excuse me, let me start over. "Which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?" And you say, "If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing. But if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath. You blind men, for which is greater the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?" We might imagine a conversation in first century Judea between Ishka Bibel and Shlomo when their agreement falls apart. "Shlomo, last week you swore to me by the temple that you would buy all of my sheep today for a thousand shekels and now you say you will only pay 700. Yes Ish, but I didn't swear by the gold in in the temple. And what's more important, the temple or all its sacred gold?

    14:02-14:06

And besides, all your sheep are diseased. I am released from my promise.

    14:08-14:12

Unless you think I'm picking on Jewish people, I am not. Some of my ancestors are Jewish.

    14:17-14:22

So why are you telling us this, Rich? It's kind of amusing, but it's hardly relevant to me.

    14:23-14:31

I've never sworn an oath in my life like Shlomo and Ish, but you have and you do.

    14:32-14:54

It just looks a little different from first century Judaism. We make oaths and vows and pledges often. When two people get married, they vow before God to love one another for so long as they live, and when someone testifies in court, they take an oath under penalty of perjury to To tell the truth, so help me God.

    14:56-15:01

When you take out a car loan or a mortgage, don't listen to that, Alex.

    15:02-15:09

When you take out a car loan or a mortgage, you vow to pay it back, because if you don't, the law is going to come looking for you.

    15:10-15:13

If you were a scout, you took an oath on your honor.

    15:14-15:21

If you serve or have served in the military or as a police officer or as a public servant, took an oath of office.

    15:24-15:34

And I know one vow, a pledge, that almost every single person in this room has taken. Do you want to start it with me?

    15:36-16:56

I pledge allegiance to the flag, right? Yeah, we take oaths, we just don't recognize them as such. And those are all positive examples of oaths. The majority of people taking them do so sincerely. But here's some other examples of the way we take oaths, some not so sincere. Have you ever noticed how often people preface something with "to be honest" or "if I'm being honest" or "I got to be honest with you" or "I'm not gonna lie to you" or "to tell the truth" or "actually" we say that one in our house a lot. Actually, why do we feel the need to say such things if we are in fact going to tell the truth? Are we not in effect taking an oath by attempting to puff up our character for truthfulness in the eyes of another person? And yet when we hear such things, when people say that kind of stuff to us, our lie detectors are activated and we're immediately on our guard. Do you remember the kind of things we did as kids, right? If we made a solemn promise or sworn to secrecy, we would pinky swear, right? Or we would say, "Cross my heart and hope to die.

    16:56-17:02

Stick a finger in your eye." Do kids still do this stuff? Am I showing my age?

    17:03-17:21

Am I showing how old I am? Right? But we would do that stuff, and then what also would we do? We got our fingers crossed behind our back. Because if I give me an out, if I broke my promise, why that gives me an out? I don't know. It just did.

    17:22-19:37

We see this with marriage today. I promise to love you and cherish you for so long as we both shall live, but sign this prenuptial agreement in case I fall in love with somebody else. We try to make deals with others to manage and manipulate them. "Honey, I swear I won't buy any more clothes on credit. If I do, you can cut up all our credit cards." "But I still have my own credit card and I'll make ATM withdrawals to buy clothes." "Babe, I swear this is the last time I will look at that website. If I do, you can disconnect the internet." She's not going to disconnect the internet. And you're just gonna go look at porn on your phone or you'll search with stealth mode. I swear that's the last drink I'll ever take, or I'm sorry I promise this is the last time I will hurt you. Okay, you promised that before. Were you telling the truth then or are you telling the truth now? Are you lying then or are you lying now? Or we try to make deals with God. Lord, if you will just let me win this jackpot. I swear I'll never play the lottery again." But I got FanDuel downloaded on my phone. All right, God, if you'll just change him and fix our relationship, I promise I'll change too, I swear. And of course, that immediately goes out the window as soon as the next argument starts. James precisely because it so often involves duplicity and loopholes that allow us to weasel out of a promise. We too must cease swearing in the form of worthless promises and vainly puffing up our character for truthfulness. So if I'm going to tell the truth, I must speak honestly. It would be good at this point to ask, "Well, if James is so concerned with truthfulness, as you claim brunk, why didn't he just say, "But above all, my brothers, always tell the truth.

    19:38-20:08

Above all, be truthful." Well, there's perhaps several reasons. One, because oath-taking was a real problem for Jewish believers. Two, because those Jewish believers might have said, "Tell the truth? No problem, I'm a truthful person." But a third reason might be the most important, because oath-taking is evidence of a heart problem. What does the prophet Jeremiah tell us?

    20:09-20:22

The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately sick. Who can understand it? Throughout his letter, James has driven home the fact that what we say reveals what is in our heart.

    20:22-21:14

The opposite of speaking deceptively is to let your yes be yes and your no be no. Well is that all there is to it? Just answer yes or no? Will that take care of your heart condition? I suppose if we took a poll at the door and asked people as they came in, do you consider yourself to be a truthful person? Almost everyone who entered this morning would have said yes. And why would you say that Christian? Maybe your answer would simply be, well I always try to tell the truth. Or maybe your reasoning goes something like this, the truth is found in Christ, I believe in Christ, and Christ is in me, therefore I've become a more truthful person. Do you know what that makes you?

    21:17-21:32

A living, breathing, walking, talking oath. If you profess to be a follower of Jesus, You are always under oath. You are obligated to tell the truth always and in everything.

    21:34-21:36

How are you doing in that department?

    21:39-22:51

I have to confess my original ideas for this sermon were all lofty, kind of philosophical musings about the truth, you know, very 30,000 foot level stuff. And This notion that I am always under oath pulled me up short and brought me under a strong conviction. To preach to you, I had to admit to myself that in many of the things I say, I am not telling the truth. And it's not just me, because as I said, we grow up in a culture accustomed to lying, and we all rationalize and justify our own lies. I looked to that fount of all truth and wisdom, the Internet, for some statistics. Do you know the average American lies three times a day? There was a study in Great Britain that revealed that men lie an average of six times a day while women average three lies a day.

    22:55-23:01

Three lies a day equals about 90 lies a month and that's 1,080 lies a year.

    23:01-23:07

Multiply that by your current age and that amounts to a lot of weaseliness.

    23:09-23:18

The majority of survey respondents said they lie, usually little white lies, in order to avoid conflict or avoid hurting someone's feelings.

    23:19-23:27

75% of the respondents in the British survey said it was acceptable to lie to spare someone's feelings.

    23:30-23:42

That's probably a lie in itself, isn't it? Because the reality is people lie to protect themselves and their own self-image. Let's look at some common lies. What do you think the number one lie is?

    23:43-23:45

The number one lie that's told, any guesses?

    23:49-24:03

"I'm fine, it's fine, I'm fine," or "I'm fine, I'm fine, just leave me alone, I'm fine." You hear those words and you know everything is wrong.

    24:04-26:00

Everything's wrong, nothing is fine, but yet we say that to either, "I'm fine, now I want you to bend the knee and come groveling and figure out why I'm what's really the problem," right? See, we say those kinds of things to manipulate people. How about its close cousin? "Nothing's wrong, why should anything be wrong?" Why, everything is wrong. You need to figure out what it is. How about excuses? Do we ever tell excuses? Do you know what an excuse is? An excuse is the skin of a reason stuffed with a lie. I don't know why but that makes me think of those little cocktail wieners. An excuse is just about as appetizing. So what do we say? "I'm sorry I'm late. I ran into to some traffic. I didn't leave until just like five minutes before our appointment, but there was traffic, right? Oh hey, sorry I didn't reply. I didn't see your message. I just swiped and deleted it. How about this one? We're so busy. We've got so much going on. Hey, I got to jump on another call because I'm tired of talking to you. How about flattery? Have you ever flatter anybody? "You look great! You haven't changed a bit!" Exaggeration. This is my favorite. This is my favorite exaggeration. I hear it all the time. Frankly, I hear people say it to their kids. "You, that was awesome! You're awesome dude! You graduated from fifth grade.

    26:03-26:42

Graduation wasn't even a, fifth grade wasn't even a thing when I was a kid." Right? How about this one? This is a good one. "I went to church with Najee Harris." Okay, he came in one time and he sat in the back row and Then he left when he realized that he was in the wrong church But I went to church with Najee Harris How sincere are we in what we say to others every day How much of what you say to others shades the truth to put you in a good light to protect or enhance your reputation?

    26:43-26:58

What do you say to persuade someone that you are a trustworthy person an upright person a reliable person a likable person How much of what you say is designed to manipulate or manage others in some way?

    27:00-27:26

And you're willing to lie to them to bend them to your purpose How much of what you say is a lie intended to end an unpleasant or uncomfortable conversation to make an excuse, to delay an undesirable outcome. Do you exaggerate or flatter to manipulate people? We must stop speaking this way and speak honestly.

    27:27-28:45

Here are some things to think about before opening your mouth again. Check your motives. Why do I want to say what I'm about to say? Is it self-serving? Is pure? Is it loving? Is it necessary? Is it true? Check your emotions. Remember, we are to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. If you're agitated or angry, it's probably best not to speak until you've cooled off. Choose your words carefully. Make them simple and sincere. Make sure they are accurate. Don't exaggerate or use words that blow things out of proportion. You always and you never are unhelpful and most likely untrue. It might be more accurate to say sometimes or there are times when you haven't done such-and-such. And as I said, not everything is awesome What words do you have to describe the Lord God Almighty if your new truck rims or your latest manicure is awesome?

    28:48-29:16

And you don't really love everything that you say you do I Love ice cream. I love my mom. I Love my pet. I love Jesus. I Think you get the point And while you are learning to choose your words carefully, work on increasing your vocabulary so that you have fitting words to use in every occasion.

    29:18-29:19

    So how are we doing?

    29:20-29:22

You still convinced you're a truthful person?

    29:23-29:30

So much more truthful than the readers of James' letter who needed this upbraiding?

    29:32-29:50

much more truthful that you don't need to hear anything more? But wait, there is more. If I'm going to tell the truth, I must reckon with the consequences for lying. James concludes the verse so that you may not fall under condemnation.

    29:51-31:49

Many of the commentators I read on this verse don't even touch this. Don't want touch it. If you have a study Bible, look in your notes and see if there's a note on condemnation. But there it is, and we have to grapple with it. This is a strong word in the Greek, "krisis," and it means judgment, libel to punishment, or as translated in the ESV, "condemnation." What does James mean by this? He means that if you're careless with your words, if you're a chronic liar, there will be consequences. But condemnation? Is he saying I'll experience eternal damnation for lying? Well, Satan is a liar and the father of lies and he will be spending eternity in the lake of fire. If you're not a believer in Jesus and you're a compulsive liar, well then yes, you're going to be spending eternity with your father the devil. But James is writing to believers. Romans 8 says there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That's very true. Your sins are all forgiven. But that does not change the fact that lying lips are an abomination to God. Pastor Jeff talked about this same thing last week. There will be a day of judgment for believers and each one of us will have to give an account for our works and our words. There will be rewards given for righteousness and and rewards forfeited for sinful behavior.

    31:52-31:57

Make a note, first Corinthians 3 verses 11 through 15.

    31:58-32:05

First Corinthians 3 11 through 15. Maybe you can talk about those verses in your small group this week.

    32:09-32:11

And yet we keep on sinning with our mouths.

    32:13-32:58

Jesus had something to say about this to the Pharisees. He said in Matthew chapter 23, "You brood of vipers, how can you speak good when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. The good person out of all his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned." There's two things to note here. First, the way we speak is a litmus test of our salvation.

    33:00-33:37

Pastor Jeff mentioned last week that how a person handles money reveals much about their spiritual condition. So also with our words. Out of the abundance of one's heart the mouth speaks. What you say reveals a great deal about your heart and how seriously you follow Jesus. We need to set a guard over our lips. We need to cry out to God to give us clean hearts, to help us keep our tongues from speaking evil and our lips from speaking lies. Second, Jesus says we're going to have to give an account for every careless word.

    33:39-33:41

And yet we keep on sinning with our mouths.

    33:44-33:45

You know what a swear jar is?

    33:45-33:46

    Anybody have a swear jar?

    33:49-33:50

    It's like a jar.

    33:50-33:54

And people, every time they swear, they put some money in the jar.

    33:54-33:59

And then when they get enough money saved up, they have a party or they go on vacation.

    34:00-36:18

I don't know about you, but giving yourself reward seems counterintuitive if the goal is to reduce swearing. Well, if you keep on swearing with your mouth, you won't have a swear jar on the day of judgment when you have to give an account for your words. You may have a dumpster and it's going to be filled with 50 and 100 dollar bills and it's gonna be on fire. You will forfeit the reward you could have had from speaking the truth in all circumstances. You may say, "Rich, aren't you just kind of overstating things here? A dumpster fire, really?" Let me ask you, does Jesus, your God and Savior, tell the truth? Does he take telling the truth seriously? Do you know of any scriptures that give us license to lie, mislead, or manipulate with our words? Do you know of any righteousness ever produced in this world in your life as a result of lies? May God impress on our minds the seriousness of speaking truth so that we will have no reason to be ashamed of our words now or on the day of judgment. We must stop sinning with our mouths and speak honestly. Now that's the end of the verse and I could finish right there. We don't want to end there do we? This sermon is about how to tell the truth and we need to change in this area of our walk. So if I'm going to tell the truth I must do what is true. But I do my best to tell the truth. I'm living my truth. I always tell the truth from a certain point of view. That's the problem, isn't it? We have been bombarded with ideas that the truth is relative, that it's cultural, it's a construct. So if I tell the truth most of the time and especially about important things, well I'm doing better than the average bear.

    36:20-37:13

It makes me think Yogi Bear was pretty deceitful most of the time. But this is the conventional wisdom, isn't it? And as we learned in a previous sermon, wisdom like this is earthly, unspiritual, and demonic. If we want to be truthful and we are commanded to do so, we have to know where to find truth. Well, good news. We which tells us truth is a person. Jesus Christ. And he said, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." And Jesus points us back to Scripture to know the truth. He said, "Sanctify them in the truth.

    37:13-37:35

your word is truth." So from Scripture we know that Jesus is the truth and he affirms the Scriptures are the truth. Oh, so I just need to know what's in the Bible to tell the truth? No, you need to do what is commanded to tell the truth.

    37:35-40:57

Now Jesus modeled this for us. He obeyed God's Word perfectly. He kept the whole law and never sinned in what he said or did. He only spoke what he heard from his father and he only did what he saw his father doing. When Jesus was debating with some of the Jews, he said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does that the Son does likewise. So if you want to be truthful you must imitate Jesus and like him do what God commands. Now have we not heard this before in James letter right? You can repeat it with me. Be a doer of the word and not a hearer only. So what commands are we to obey? All of them. All of them. So that means you must read and study your Bible. There's no substitute for renewing your mind with God's Word. But relating to our speech and its effect on our relationships, here are a few pertinent commands. Colossians 3:9 do not lie to one another seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices. Ephesians 425, therefore having put away falsehood let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor for we are members of one another. And then Matthew 7 12, whatever you wish that others would do to you do also to them for this is the law and the prophets." I mean really, do you like it when people lie to you? I don't think I have to answer that question. This is not legalism. This is what love looks like. Jesus said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." Obedience is proof of our faith and proof that we truly know and love God. Let's look at 1st John 2 3 through 6. "By this we know that we have come to know him if we keep his commandments. Whoever says, 'I know him,' but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his word in him, truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him. Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he, Jesus, walked." Again, this is not about trying to keep God's commandments to earn his approval to get into heaven. You cannot earn God's approval by doing good works. You can only gain eternal life by recognizing right now that you're a sinner and that your sins have separated you from your creator. Your sin has put you squarely under God's wrath, but this is the good news.

    40:57-41:09

Jesus Christ died for sinners. He obediently gave his life for sinners on the cross. He was buried and he rose again on the third day. All of that according to the scriptures.

    41:12-41:18

and he did that to give eternal life to everyone who repents and believes in him.

    41:18-41:38

There is salvation in nothing and no one else, for there's no other name but Jesus, given among men under heaven, by which we must be saved. If you are concerned about your eternal soul, you need first and foremost to obey the command to repent and believe in Jesus.

    41:40-41:47

If you've never done this, come talk to me, talk to Jeff, talk to Taylor, talk to one of our elders.

    41:52-41:57

And if you're sincerely obeying and doing what God has commanded, what do you have to lie about?

    41:58-42:25

You will be doing the truth, thus you will be telling the truth. You'll have nothing to hide, no reputation of your own to protect, no longer will you be using or manipulating people with your words. And beloved, when we do sin with our mouth and we wrong another, we need to be quick to ask for forgiveness immediately. You see, that's the wonderful thing about life in Christ.

    42:26-42:39

He's always present to forgive, to correct, and to help us obey. You see, you will be speaking the truth because you will be doing what is true. Your yes will sincerely be yes.

    42:40-43:22

Your no will be straightforward and honestly no. You won't need to preface what you say with phrases like, "not gonna lie to you," because you will have so much integrity. People will believe what you say. Your word will be your bond. You will be imitating Jesus Christ, who in love did everything his father commanded, and you will not fall under condemnation, but you will have a great reward." As our worship team comes forward and we conclude this message, we need to realize that a message like this requires a definite response.

    43:24-43:42

We have seen how we speak is of the highest importance to God, who spoke everything into existence, who speaks to us through his creation, who speaks to us through his word, who in these last days has spoken to us by his Son, who always speaks what is true.

    43:44-43:50

What commitment will you make today and this week in response to God's word?

    43:51-43:51

    Will it be?

    43:52-43:54

I'll try to be more truthful.

    43:56-43:59

Well, you might as well say, "I'll do my best to lie less.

    43:59-44:04

Cross my heart, hope to die." Because that means you're still a liar, doesn't it?

    44:06-44:08

Beloved, that is not for us.

    44:08-44:10

For us, there is only one response.

    44:11-44:15

My Lord and my God, I will tell the truth.

    44:17-44:17

    Let's pray.

    44:19-44:42

Our gracious, loving Father, our truth and our life, again I ask, plant your word deep in our hearts, convict us of your truth so that we will be always and ever truth tellers in all we say, all we do, all we think.

    44:43-44:51

And I pray that you would help us each day to become more and more like our Savior Jesus Christ.

    44:52-44:54

And it's in His name we pray, amen.

Father, we believe your Word does your work, and we thank you when you give us the opportunity to see your Word and your Spirit at work in the lives of people. That's all we want here, Father, for you to show up and do what you do as we present ourselves to you as your servants. We pray in Jesus' name. And all of God's people said, amen.

    01:10-01:11

James chapter five, are you there?

    01:14-01:21

Several years ago, this one particular morning, I was having a really rough morning.

    01:24-01:26

And I thought, you know what'll make this morning all better?

    01:28-01:33

I stopped at Pantera Bread and got a Cinna Crunch Bagel.

    01:35-01:37

And I'm like, that is going to turn this franchise around.

    01:40-01:44

Well, I went to the Pantera up here in Cranberry and the, you know, Cinnacrunch bagel.

    01:44-01:50

And the guy, he put the bagel in the brown bag and, you know, he handed it to me.

    01:50-01:52

And as he handed it to me, I walked away.

    01:52-01:54

He was like, "Oh yeah, sorry, that's not toasted.

    01:54-01:56

    "Our toaster isn't working.

    01:56-02:06

"So it's not toasted." And I gotta tell you, it's embarrassing to stand in front of you and say this.

    02:07-02:09

I really got bent out of shape about that.

    02:10-02:11

I mean, I didn't say anything to him.

    02:12-02:13

    I got to my car.

    02:15-02:17

And did you ever have something just hit you raw?

    02:18-02:21

Just like raw nerve, and it was sort of like the straw that broke the camel's back.

    02:22-02:22

You know what I'm talking about?

    02:23-02:24

Don't leave me up here, come on.

    02:24-02:26

    Okay, thank you, thank you.

    02:28-02:32

But I was so angry about this stupid bagel.

    02:33-02:36

I was so angry, I'm like, why didn't he say anything when I ordered it?

    02:36-02:41

Why did he let me swipe the card and the money and he gives me the bank, and then tell me to I'm leaving?

    02:41-02:44

I mean, like, what is he, what is he, Al-Qaeda?

    02:44-02:46

Like, why would he do something like that?

    02:47-02:48

    Why, who are they hiring?

    02:48-02:49

Do they have a hiring process?

    02:50-02:52

This guy shouldn't be allowed on the streets.

    02:54-02:57

A maniac like this should be locked up.

    02:59-03:06

I have children and people like this roam free And I was so been out of shape about this.

    03:06-03:08

And I'm like, what can I do?

    03:08-03:09

    What can I do?

    03:09-03:20

So I did, I called like Pantera headquarters and I'm like, you're not gonna believe what one of these miserable Nazi employees of yours did.

    03:22-03:26

I might not have said it in those exact words but that was the spirit behind it.

    03:27-03:31

And they were just like, oh, I'm sorry about that.

    03:31-03:31

    We'll refund the money.

    03:33-03:38

And I'm like, "But I'm still mad!" And they refunded the money.

    03:41-03:45

And I'm like, "Wow, I have a problem."

    03:49-03:50

    (congregation laughing)

    03:50-03:56

I have a big problem with being patient with people.

    03:58-04:03

I was ready to take a guy to court over a bagel.

    04:05-04:07

I'm not very proud of that.

    04:09-04:10

But maybe you've had moments like that.

    04:14-04:19

Where you're like, man, maybe I'm not as patient with people as I'd like to be.

    04:21-04:23

We're gonna talk about patience today.

    04:25-04:25

    Woo-hoo!

    04:25-04:28

I'm like preaching on patience this week.

    04:29-04:30

    Kid gets really sick.

    04:34-04:40

God has a way of helping me see if I really believe what I'm preaching.

    04:43-04:50

But you know, when we talk about patience, I learned this this week, I didn't know this, but there's different Greek words for patience.

    04:50-04:55

One Greek word for patience has to deal with patience in circumstances.

    04:56-05:01

And there's another Greek word for patience that has to do with patience with people.

    05:02-05:07

And that's the one that we're going to talk about today, patience with people.

    05:09-05:18

Hard circumstances and hard people each require patience.

    05:21-05:23

But there's a different word for that in the Greek.

    05:24-05:26

And I thought about that a lot this week.

    05:27-05:32

Like what's the difference between being patient in circumstances and being patient with people?

    05:34-05:36

I just, I kept thinking about that.

    05:36-05:37

    Like what's the difference?

    05:37-05:38

    What's the difference?

    05:39-05:39

    And then something hit me.

    05:40-05:54

You know, when it comes to circumstances, sometimes we want to lash out, but it's kind of hard to personally attack a circumstance.

    05:54-05:55

    You know what I mean?

    05:57-06:07

Like yesterday when Cade was having this episode, I would have loved to grab whatever personification of this thing was.

    06:07-06:11

I would have loved to grab it and slap it around and throw it out the door, but I couldn't.

    06:11-06:15

It was a circumstance and I was helpless to do anything about it.

    06:18-06:20

But you know, people are different.

    06:21-06:27

Because hard people do give us the opportunity to lash out and fight back, don't they?

    06:28-06:29

    You know what I mean?

    06:31-06:37

I might not be able to personally attack a circumstance, but I can personally attack a person.

    06:38-06:50

Whether it's angry words or belittling someone, condescending tone, telling somebody off, slandering.

    06:52-06:53

    getting even with someone.

    06:55-06:56

I can do that to a person.

    06:56-06:57

    I can't do that to a circumstance.

    07:01-07:07

Don't shout out any names, but are there people in your life that are testing your patience?

    07:08-07:09

    Don't point either.

    07:11-07:14

I see some of you like that guy over there.

    07:16-07:18

But maybe you've got somebody in your life that's testing your patience.

    07:19-07:20

    Maybe it's an unbelieving spouse.

    07:22-07:24

    Maybe it's a know-it-all family member.

    07:26-07:29

Maybe it's a godless, domineering boss.

    07:31-07:32

    Maybe it's that annoying coworker.

    07:35-07:36

    Maybe it's an unsaved neighbor.

    07:36-07:42

All these people give us opportunity to show patience.

    07:44-07:44

    How are you doing there?

    07:48-07:55

Now, maybe like the dreaded bagel incident, you've learned that you have some room to grow, like me, in that area.

    07:56-08:01

And fortunately, we have God's word to give us direction on how to grow.

    08:02-08:05

So on your outline, how to be patient with people.

    08:06-08:09

Five things to say to yourself when you're losing your patience with people.

    08:11-08:15

Five things to say to yourself when you're losing your patience with people.

    08:15-08:20

You know, when people say, when you're about to blow your top, You gotta slow it down, you gotta take a deep breath, you gotta count to 10.

    08:22-08:23

I'm gonna save you half the time.

    08:24-08:25

I'm gonna say count to five.

    08:26-08:27

    Yeah, you're welcome.

    08:31-08:32

    Count to five.

    08:34-08:41

And when you're gonna lose patience with people, here's five things that you can say to yourself.

    08:42-08:47

Number one, write this down, lost people act like lost people.

    08:47-08:48

    That's the first one.

    08:48-08:50

Let's look at the first six verses here in James chapter five.

    08:54-08:56

He says, "Come now, you rich.

    08:58-09:01

"Weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you.

    09:03-09:08

"Your riches have rotted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

    09:09-09:20

"Your gold and silver have corroded, "and their corrosion will be evidence against you, "and will eat your flesh like fire." You've laid up treasure in the last days.

    09:22-09:32

Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you.

    09:32-09:36

And the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

    09:38-09:41

You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence.

    09:42-09:44

You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter.

    09:45-09:49

You have condemned and murdered the righteous person.

    09:50-09:51

    He does not resist you.

    09:52-09:53

    Stop there.

    09:54-10:02

James starts off this section by rebuking people that were problem people for the people of his day.

    10:03-10:05

    And that's the oppressive rich.

    10:05-10:10

Now look, we had a whole sermon about this back in, what was that, chapter two.

    10:14-10:16

    all rich people are bad.

    10:16-10:18

    Nobody is saying that.

    10:19-10:34

But what we said back then, and I'd like to remind you, the point is this, in general, when you look at history, do we typically see poor people oppressing rich people or rich people oppressing poor people?

    10:34-10:36

Which way does it generally go?

    10:37-10:39

Okay, that's what he's talking about here, okay?

    10:42-10:54

And remember, this was going out to Christian Jews who were scattered due to persecution and people who were saved and unsaved were going to be hearing this message.

    10:56-11:00

And James here is giving a warning to the unsaved.

    11:00-11:06

And I would say, if this describes you, you better listen up.

    11:09-11:11

    Because nothing reveals your heart.

    11:13-11:17

more objectively than the way you view and spend money.

    11:18-11:20

    It's an objective test.

    11:21-11:26

How you view and spend money tells you where your heart is.

    11:28-11:29

    I didn't make that up.

    11:30-11:32

    Jesus pointed this truth out.

    11:32-11:39

Matthew 6, 21, Jesus said, "For where your treasure is, "there your heart will be also." And we wanna flip that.

    11:40-11:43

We want it to say where your heart is, that's where your treasure is.

    11:44-11:46

As well, oh, you know, my heart's with missions.

    11:47-11:50

See all these people up here with missions, oh, my heart's with missions.

    11:52-11:57

And Jesus would say in response to that, well, how much do you give to missions?

    11:58-11:59

    Well, I really don't.

    12:00-12:06

Then your heart's not with missions because you find where your treasure is, then you'll find your heart.

    12:07-12:08

    Now show me your checkbook.

    12:09-12:10

    Like, I don't have a checkbook.

    12:10-12:22

All right, smarty pants, Mr. Highfalutin, living in 2024, online banking, show me your statement online, where you spend your money, and I'll show you where your heart is.

    12:22-12:25

Because Jesus said where your treasure is, that's where your heart is.

    12:27-12:35

And James here is warning those who have their treasure, therefore their hearts set on worldly prosperity.

    12:36-12:41

He says in verse three, You've laid up treasure in the last days.

    12:44-12:48

Now the term last days, that refers to the last chunk of history before Jesus returns.

    12:49-12:56

Okay, from Jesus ascension until his second coming, that period of time is called the last days.

    12:56-12:58

    James' audience lived in that.

    12:58-13:00

We today live in the last days.

    13:03-13:12

So during this chunk of history, while we're waiting for our Lord to return, How should money be used?

    13:14-13:17

How should we be spending money while we wait for the return of the Lord?

    13:18-13:19

    Whether James' audience or you.

    13:21-13:24

And as far as I can see biblically, there's really two ways we should be spending our money.

    13:25-13:27

God's money, you know what I mean.

    13:28-13:29

There's two ways that we should be spending money.

    13:30-13:31

One is to take care of your family.

    13:33-13:34

You should be providing for your family.

    13:35-13:37

If you don't, God says you're worse than an unbeliever.

    13:38-13:40

    Sickest burn ever, all right?

    13:41-13:42

    Right, Taylor?

    13:43-13:45

You should be taking care of your family.

    13:45-13:47

And the other way you should be using your money is to support missions.

    13:48-13:56

Whether it's giving to the mission that's happening in the local church, or the missions that are happening beyond the walls of the church, like we talked about here.

    13:58-13:59

That's how money should be spent.

    14:02-14:16

But based on the way that some people, and maybe it's you, you know, and God knows, But based on the way that some people spend their money, they act like they don't think Jesus is returning and they act like we ain't leaving the earth either.

    14:18-14:21

That this is just how it's always going to be forever.

    14:24-14:26

That's what James talked about in this chunk.

    14:26-14:31

We could spend a sermon series on this, but James says you're storing up stuff.

    14:31-14:34

    You're taking advantage of people.

    14:34-14:36

    You're living in self-indulgence.

    14:37-14:39

excuse me, you're even oppressing people in court.

    14:42-14:46

You're living a life consumed by serving money to the point of harming others.

    14:46-14:49

And James is giving a warning to people that do that.

    14:53-15:08

But for those who are suffering at the hands of someone else, whether it's the rich people mentioned here or any reason you're suffering at the hands of someone else.

    15:09-15:15

James also gives a reminder in this passage that God's gonna deal with them.

    15:16-15:16

    Did you see that?

    15:17-15:33

He says, "Miseries are coming." He says, "The cries of the harvester have reached God's ears." He says, "You've fattened your heart in a day of slaughter." He says, you know, God's gonna deal with the people that hurt and oppress others.

    15:33-15:34

    God's gonna deal with them.

    15:38-15:43

And before we start the condemnation, I'd like to remind you that we all deserve God's wrath.

    15:45-15:49

Because we all have wicked hearts by nature, we're born with that.

    15:52-16:00

But see, the glory of the gospel is that when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, he gives you a new heart.

    16:03-16:12

But some people, like the people James is talking about here, some people that haven't received Christ still have the wicked heart.

    16:14-16:27

So I'd like to remind you, you know, when it's hard to be patient with people, that people who haven't been changed by Jesus act like people who haven't been what?

    16:28-16:30

    by Jesus, right?

    16:31-16:33

Lost people act like lost people.

    16:36-16:38

That's the first thing you need to say to yourself.

    16:39-16:57

If you're gonna lose patience with someone, maybe someone who doesn't know the Lord, say, "Hey, hey, hey, lost people act like lost people." All right, second thing, number two, this is one that I say to myself multiple times a day, truly, and you've heard me say this before.

    16:58-17:05

You'll hear me say this, until I'm with the Lord, things won't always be as they are now.

    17:06-17:10

That's the second thing to say to yourself when you're losing your patience with people.

    17:10-17:11

Things won't always be as they are now.

    17:11-17:12

    Look at verse seven.

    17:15-17:34

He says, "Be patient therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord." See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it until it receives the early and the late rains.

    17:35-17:36

    Stop there.

    17:37-17:42

You know, that's a great thing about all these troubles, whether it's troubled circumstances or troubled people.

    17:42-17:50

Great thing about all these terrible things that we endure in life on earth is it makes us long for the return of Jesus.

    17:53-17:59

And here in this section, James doesn't give us some eschatological timeline.

    17:59-18:05

He doesn't give us some like breakdown of end time events, nothing specific.

    18:06-18:10

James just gives us the simple, beautiful truth that Jesus is coming.

    18:12-18:13

    He says it twice here.

    18:14-18:19

And it's a reminder for us, things won't always be as they are now.

    18:20-18:23

    So, we wait.

    18:27-18:28

    He talks about the farmer.

    18:32-18:36

You know, people always talk about farming as being hard work.

    18:38-18:39

    Is it though?

    18:42-18:43

    Is it really that hard?

    18:43-18:46

Because a lot of farming is waiting.

    18:49-18:52

And a lot of farming is trusting God to bring the rain.

    18:54-18:54

    (congregation laughing)

    18:57-19:02

And I do need to make it abundantly clear that that was a joke about farming not being hard work.

    19:04-19:07

I don't want Jesse to wreck me after service.

    19:07-19:10

Like, "What'd you say about farmers?" Like, oh boy.

    19:12-19:14

Get a hospital bed beside Cade.

    19:14-19:15

    (congregation laughing)

    19:17-19:19

    Farming is incredibly hard work.

    19:21-19:26

But at the same time, it's waiting and trusting.

    19:27-19:29

Incredibly hard work and waiting and trusting.

    19:30-19:31

Incredibly hard work and waiting and trusting.

    19:32-19:32

    Does that sound like anything?

    19:33-19:35

Farming sounds a lot like our walk with Christ.

    19:36-19:38

    We work hard, don't we?

    19:39-19:47

We work hard, but a lot of what we're doing in the church is waiting on his return and trusting him to do what only he can do in the meantime.

    19:50-19:52

So what does the farmer do while he waits?

    19:53-19:55

    Does he procrastinate?

    19:58-20:01

Like, you know what, the rains ain't coming for a while.

    20:01-20:02

I got all the time in the world.

    20:02-20:04

No, no, farmers don't do that.

    20:05-20:07

    Do farmers complain?

    20:08-20:16

Like, oh, stupid cow, stupid seed, stupid barn.

    20:16-20:17

    No, no.

    20:18-20:19

    What does the farmer do?

    20:20-20:30

He stays on it every day, on it every single day.

    20:31-20:32

    The harvest is coming.

    20:32-20:38

I got to do everything that I can now because I know that the harvest is coming.

    20:42-20:48

Yet too often in the church, procrastinate and complain is what we do.

    20:51-20:51

    We procrastinate.

    20:53-20:54

Like, yeah, I'll get to it.

    20:55-20:56

    I'll get to it.

    20:57-21:01

You know, I know I'm supposed to be baptized in response to receiving Christ.

    21:01-21:02

    I'll get to that someday.

    21:04-21:07

Maybe not the next baptism service or the one after that, but maybe someday.

    21:07-21:08

    We procrastinate.

    21:08-21:09

    Or serving.

    21:09-21:13

Yeah, I know they need help in the kids' ministry, and someday I'm gonna get involved in that.

    21:15-21:17

Call me in August or whatever.

    21:18-21:21

We procrastinate like we have all the time in the world.

    21:23-21:25

    Or we complain, right?

    21:26-21:28

We complain, we complain about people.

    21:29-21:37

I'm so sick of, you know, my marriage is miserable and I hate my neighbors and my boss is a jerk.

    21:40-21:43

Do you believe that our best days are ahead of us?

    21:45-21:48

Well, can we not be patient with people until then?

    21:53-21:54

    We don't like waiting though.

    21:56-21:57

    We don't like waiting.

    21:58-22:00

You know what Tom Petty said about waiting?

    22:02-22:03

    We don't like waiting.

    22:05-22:12

You know, our family's planning, if the Lord wills, like that call back, we're planning a vacation.

    22:13-22:15

We'd love to go to Universal Studios in Florida.

    22:15-22:15

    Have you ever been there?

    22:17-22:18

    It's a theme park.

    22:18-22:19

Have you ever been to any theme park?

    22:19-22:20

    Kennywood, Cedar Point?

    22:25-22:26

    We love that.

    22:27-22:32

But you know, I was thinking about that this week as we're making our plans and if the Lord wills.

    22:34-22:41

When you go to these theme parks, you have 90 minutes of waiting for a 90 second ride.

    22:44-22:50

And while you're standing there in line, in the little maze, right?

    22:51-22:52

There's hundreds of people in line.

    22:55-22:56

But you know, they're not complaining.

    22:59-23:08

Everyone in the maze is willing to wait because they know that something amazing is coming after they wait, right?

    23:11-23:18

And you know, I got to thinking, shouldn't we be so willing to wait because our situation's opposite?

    23:19-23:25

At the theme park, you wait a long time for a little, yay!

    23:29-23:37

But you see, for us as followers of Christ, we're waiting a little bit of time for eternal glory in the presence of our Lord.

    23:39-23:40

Shouldn't we be so willing to wait?

    23:41-24:08

And I think that's why Paul said in Romans 8, 18, not about universal, but he said, he said, "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing to the glory that is to be revealed to us." Verse eight in James five, he says, "You also be patient, establish your hearts." That means prop yourself up with this truth.

    24:08-24:12

He says, "For the coming of the Lord is at hand." It's at hand.

    24:13-24:14

The coming of the Lord is at hand.

    24:14-24:16

    It's right on the edge.

    24:18-24:29

And if you just slow down and listen and quiet yourself, sometimes I'm convinced that you can hear Jesus going to the barn and getting the horse ready.

    24:32-24:34

We are right on the edge.

    24:36-24:38

    Jesus might return today.

    24:39-24:41

So can you be patient with people for one day?

    24:43-24:46

For one day, for one day, can you be patient with people?

    24:51-24:57

And if he doesn't come today, and if you do get tomorrow, can you make the same plan?

    24:58-25:00

One day, one day at a time.

    25:02-25:12

So when we're tempted to lose our patience with people, Hey, lost people act like lost people and things will not always be as they are now.

    25:14-25:20

All right, number three, five things to say to yourself when you're losing your patience with people.

    25:20-25:23

Number three, don't forfeit your rewards.

    25:26-25:27

    Don't forfeit your rewards.

    25:29-25:33

He says in verse nine, do not grumble against one another brothers.

    25:35-25:36

Stop there for a second, grumbling.

    25:38-25:43

Grumbling not just against the person causing you problems, it's grumbling at anyone and everyone.

    25:49-25:52

And some people just won't stop grumbling about people.

    25:54-25:56

    We know people like that.

    25:57-26:02

If you stand still for longer than seven seconds, they're going to start grumbling to you about people.

    26:03-26:06

And look, maybe you are that person.

    26:11-26:16

And I don't mean this callously, because it's easy to grumble when you feel betrayed.

    26:20-26:26

It's easy to grumble when you feel abandoned, but it's sin.

    26:30-26:56

Not only is it sinful, which is the main thing that settles the issue, but a secondary problem is you sort of turn into an Eeyore or a Debbie Downer and you're miserable to everyone, even people that are trying to help you, even people in your small group that love you and want to lift you up and pray for you and all you want to do is complain about people.

    26:58-27:04

You know, my boss this and my spouse that, you're not gonna believe what this family member said to me.

    27:04-27:06

And we get into grumbling mode.

    27:09-27:11

Do you need some motivation to stop grumbling?

    27:13-27:14

Look at the rest of verse nine.

    27:15-27:19

He says, "Do not grumble against one another, brothers, "so that you may not be judged.

    27:20-27:29

"Behold, the judge is standing at the door." The judge is standing at the door and he hears every word you say, and you're gonna be judged.

    27:30-27:32

And you're like, oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on a second.

    27:33-27:37

I thought if I put my faith in Christ that I'm not going to be judged.

    27:39-27:40

You won't be judged for your sin.

    27:41-27:41

    That's true.

    27:41-27:44

Jesus, when you believe in Jesus, he takes away your sin.

    27:44-27:46

You will never be judged for your sin.

    27:46-27:48

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

    27:49-27:50

    That is absolutely true.

    27:50-27:52

You will never be judged for your sin.

    27:52-27:54

    That is absolutely true.

    27:55-28:04

But the Bible also says that your works will be judged and you will be rewarded based on your works.

    28:07-28:08

That's a whole nother sermon series.

    28:09-28:13

    Just write down 1 Corinthians 3, 2 Corinthians 5.

    28:15-28:19

You're gonna be judged on the way you conduct yourself for rewards.

    28:22-28:26

Look at what John says, this is in 2 John, verse eight.

    28:26-28:56

He says, "Watch yourselves so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward." And James here says, "The judge who has your reward is about to come through the door, listening to every word that you say, so don't forfeit your reward by sinning." And grumbling really is probably the easiest way to sin.

    28:58-28:59

So do you want a full reward?

    29:01-29:22

Well, when you're tempted to grumble, when you're tempted to lose your patience with people or express your lack of patience with people, just stop and say to yourself, hey, you know, no, no, I'm not gonna grumble because I don't wanna lose any reward.

    29:25-29:31

Number four, four things to say to yourself when you're tempted to lose your patience with people.

    29:31-29:34

Number four, faithful people are patient.

    29:36-29:37

    Look at verse 10.

    29:39-29:52

He says, "As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord." Like what does suffering and patience look like?

    29:52-29:53

He says, look at the prophets.

    29:53-29:55

    Get in your Bible, read.

    29:57-30:09

How these faithful men and women from the Old Testament, he's talking about specifically here, were patient with suffering, specifically suffering with people.

    30:10-30:16

We talked about this in Hebrews 11, not too awful long ago, but they all went through it.

    30:18-30:21

but it helps us to have an example to look to.

    30:22-30:23

    It helps us.

    30:24-30:29

You know, one of my favorite examples to look to, this is an Old Testament, this is a New Testament, Acts chapter 14.

    30:29-30:30

    I love the passage.

    30:30-30:34

We went through Acts years ago, and I'm sure you remember this sermon.

    30:34-30:36

You're like, "Oh yeah, I remember that sermon." No, you don't.

    30:37-30:38

    Thanks for trying.

    30:38-30:41

But Acts chapter 14, I love this passage.

    30:42-30:44

    Paul was stoned.

    30:45-30:52

They tried to execute Paul via pelting with rocks.

    30:55-31:02

And as he laid there in a pile of his own blood and misery, his buddies were standing around looking at him.

    31:04-31:05

    They thought he was dead.

    31:07-31:11

The Bible says he got up and he went right back to work.

    31:12-31:17

And he said, it is through many tribulations you must enter the kingdom of God.

    31:18-31:21

I love that passage because it's convicting to me.

    31:22-31:28

For all the times in my life that I'm like, "Oh, boo hoo, somebody said something mean to me.

    31:28-31:29

    "I'm gonna quit ministry.

    31:30-31:44

"I'm gonna quit being a pastor "because somebody sent me an email that was mean." I look at Paul and I'm like, Like Jeff, stop your crying.

    31:46-31:48

Like nobody's ever tried to do that to me.

    31:49-31:53

I mean, the day's early, but nobody's tried to do that to me.

    31:57-31:58

    There's so many examples.

    31:59-32:00

Oh man, there's so many examples.

    32:01-32:02

We can talk about Joseph, right?

    32:02-32:03

His brothers were gonna kill him.

    32:04-32:04

    Instead, they faked his death.

    32:04-32:07

They sold him into slavery and then things really got rough.

    32:07-32:08

    We can talk about Moses.

    32:10-32:16

Oh gosh, Moses, Israel was constantly complaining and undermining him.

    32:17-32:21

We can talk about Jeremiah, threatened, put in stocks, thrown into a pit.

    32:21-32:26

How about the best person ever to speak in the name of the Lord?

    32:28-32:34

Number one, no equal, Jesus Christ and his example.

    32:35-32:37

Did Jesus ever deal with problem people?

    32:41-32:43

Did Jesus ever encounter someone that gave him a hard time?

    32:49-32:54

So you see, when you're misunderstood, like Jesus gets that.

    32:55-32:58

And when you're betrayed, Jesus gets that.

    33:00-33:03

When you're abandoned, Jesus gets that.

    33:05-33:09

When you've been slandered, Jesus gets that.

    33:10-33:14

When you've been misquoted, Jesus gets that.

    33:17-33:24

If you've been physically assaulted, Jesus gets that because they nailed him to a cross.

    33:26-33:43

So I just wanna encourage you, my friends, to be in the word, be in the word, because not only will you grow your faith, because faith comes by hearing, hearing through the word of Christ, but you'll also see examples of other people who love the Lord and learned patience because of problem people.

    33:46-33:54

And maybe you'll also discover that you're not the first to have to deal with problem people.

    33:58-34:03

And maybe you'll discover that others have had to deal with things way worse than you.

    34:05-34:07

    So, are you faithful?

    34:08-34:10

And I imagine everyone here is like, I wanna be.

    34:12-34:21

Well, when you're dealing with problem people, remind yourself, hey, hey, hey, faithful people are patient.

    34:23-34:24

    Faithful people are patient.

    34:27-34:31

Then number five, finally, patience is good for me.

    34:32-34:35

    Patience is good for me.

    34:40-34:41

    Look at verse 11.

    34:42-35:02

He says, "Behold, we consider those blessed "who remain steadfast." That Greek word for consider, he says, "We consider those blessed who remain steadfast." Consider, that Greek word means common opinion, meaning, look, it's a universal truth.

    35:04-35:09

People who endure are blessed, and we all get that, right?

    35:09-35:10

    We all get that.

    35:11-35:15

Everyone, everyone, literally, literally everyone gets that.

    35:15-35:18

The people that endure hardship are blessed, everyone.

    35:19-35:26

No one, no one, no one is ever like, "Man, did you see that guy?

    35:26-35:33

He endured such terrible hardship, and he never complained and he came out the other side.

    35:34-35:35

    What a loser.

    35:36-35:37

    Nobody says that.

    35:39-35:39

    Nobody.

    35:41-35:44

Now we admire the one that overcomes, right?

    35:45-35:46

We admire the one that overcomes.

    35:47-35:48

    Have you ever seen Rocky?

    35:50-35:51

They made like a billion of them.

    35:51-35:52

Have you seen any of them?

    35:53-35:56

Rocky three was the best by the way, but have you ever seen any of them?

    35:58-36:03

We love the overcomer, the guy that endures through suffering, the Karate Kid.

    36:05-36:06

    Are you kidding me?

    36:08-36:14

Karate Kid Part Two is way underrated, but it's a story of somebody that overcame.

    36:14-36:15

    We love that.

    36:17-36:19

Let me think of another example.

    36:19-36:24

How about literally almost every single movie that's made?

    36:25-36:26

    True or false?

    36:30-36:41

Think of a movie that's made that's not about somebody overcoming the odds and enduring suffering and coming out the other side.

    36:46-36:53

So it's not a hard sell to say, you know, patience is good for me.

    36:55-36:56

Look at the next part of verse 11.

    36:56-37:06

And he says, "You have heard of the steadfastness of Job." He's like, "You've heard of Job.

    37:08-37:19

"God permitted Satan to take Job's wealth, "his family, his health, "and all Job was left with was his wife and his buddies.

    37:21-37:31

"And that weren't great, if you know the story." He was so steadfast that he became a cliche.

    37:33-37:34

    I mean, we say that.

    37:34-37:35

I say that phrase all the time.

    37:35-37:37

Like, man, that guy's got the patience of Job.

    37:37-37:40

If you met her, she got the patience of Job.

    37:40-37:41

    He's a cliche.

    37:44-37:45

Like, well, how did he get there?

    37:49-37:52

I mean, this is a whole nother sermon again, but how did he get there?

    37:52-37:53

How did he get so steadfast?

    37:54-38:09

Here's how Job 122 says, "In all this," in all his suffering, "Job did not sin or charge God with wrong." And literally that last phrase, charge God with wrong, literally is charge God with doing that which is empty.

    38:11-38:13

That's how Job got so steadfast.

    38:15-38:19

He said, "God does nothing empty.

    38:20-38:24

Everything that God does has a purpose.

    38:25-38:26

    He believed that.

    38:28-38:29

    That's why he persevered.

    38:31-38:33

He knew that God had a purpose.

    38:33-38:34

    And back to James here.

    38:35-38:38

Oh, oh, speaking of, look at verse 11.

    38:38-38:41

"And you have seen the purpose of the Lord." There it is.

    38:43-38:48

"You have seen the purpose of the Lord." It's getting to the point, my friends, to say, look, God has a purpose.

    38:52-38:58

And you might not know what the purpose is, but that doesn't mean that God doesn't have a purpose.

    38:58-39:10

He does, He always has a purpose, even if we don't see it, or even if we might see it in a year or five years, or like Job, we might not ever fully understand on this side of heaven.

    39:15-39:16

But God always has a purpose.

    39:17-39:25

And anytime I share this, there's always somebody that's like, I'm so sick of hearing the Romans 8:28, God works all things for good.

    39:25-39:28

What could God possibly be doing in my circumstances?

    39:29-39:32

And my answer is, you'll see.

    39:35-39:35

    You'll see.

    39:38-39:48

For Job, well, you get to the end of the book and he ended up getting twice as much as he lost, But that wasn't the biggest blessing.

    39:52-39:56

The biggest blessing came when he said this, Job 42, 5.

    39:57-40:25

Job said, "I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, "but now my eye sees you." And Job was saying, God, I understand you and I see you in hardship in a way that I never did when everything was great.

    40:29-40:35

Trials allowed Job to see God's character.

    40:37-40:38

You're like, well, what is God's character?

    40:39-40:40

    I'm glad you asked.

    40:40-40:42

Last phrase in James, here it is.

    40:43-40:48

"How the Lord is compassionate and merciful." That's what Job learned.

    40:50-40:55

And through your patience, that's what you will learn.

    40:59-41:00

    Compassionate and merciful.

    41:01-41:07

Another way of saying that literally is this, God feels and God cares.

    41:11-41:16

You'll never know God's power until you're weak.

    41:18-41:26

And you're never going to know that God is a Savior until you recognize that you need saved.

    41:30-41:40

And you're never going to know that God feels and God cares until you're hurting.

    41:45-42:01

So you can refuse to be patient with people and you can be bitter or you can be steadfast and experience God's compassion in a way that you wouldn't otherwise.

    42:05-42:13

So needing patience is never fun, but growing in patience is always good for me.

    42:15-42:17

Our worship team would make their way back.

    42:21-42:42

In just a couple of moments, we're going to sing, and you're going to walk out the door, and you're going to run right into someone who will require patience, because God wants to know if you were listening today.

    42:47-43:15

And if you were, and you believe what God said, and you're about to flip out over a stupid bagel, I want to encourage you to take a deep breath and say, I choose patience because lost people act like lost people.

    43:17-43:20

I choose patience because things won't always be as they are now.

    43:24-43:29

I'm going to choose patience, Jeff, Jeff, hey, hey, don't forfeit your rewards.

    43:32-43:39

I choose patience because faithful people are patient, and I'm growing to be a faithful person.

    43:42-43:44

And I choose patience because patience is good for me.

    43:46-43:46

    Let's pray.

    43:48-43:54

Father in heaven, Jesus said, "If you know these things, blessed are you.

    43:54-43:54

    if you do them.

    43:56-44:05

And God, you know better than anyone the struggles that I've had in being patient with people.

    44:09-44:10

And so much more over a bagel incident.

    44:13-44:33

But God, I pray for myself, and I pray for my brothers and sisters here, for people that are watching this stream, are gonna be downloading this podcast later And listening to this, I pray, Father, that by the wisdom of your word, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we would grow to be people who are patient with people.

    44:37-44:42

We ask you, Father, manifest your grace in this area in our lives.

    44:43-44:45

    In Jesus' name, amen.

It's New Year's Eve and it's the magical time of year where we're making New Year's resolutions.

    00:51-01:02

And I actually before we look at that I want us to look at some statistics regarding making New Year's resolutions.

    01:03-01:08

All right. So I thought we could do it the boring way and I just read you the statistics.

    01:08-01:09

Or we could do it the fun way.

    01:09-01:10

    Let's make it a game.

    01:11-01:11

    All right?

    01:11-01:12

We're going to make it a game.

    01:12-01:13

It's going to be a guessing game.

    01:14-01:16

    And everybody's going to participate.

    01:16-01:16

    All right?

    01:17-01:20

If you're watching at home, you can participate too.

    01:20-01:23

You're just going to have to speak extra loud.

    01:24-01:24

    All right?

    01:27-01:29

So you're going to have to guess the percentage.

    01:30-01:30

    All right?

    01:33-01:38

What percentage of US adults set New Year's resolutions every year?

    01:39-01:42

Now, I'm gonna give you an opportunity in a second.

    01:42-01:52

I want you to shout out an answer and whatever answer I hear the most clearly, which who knows what that'll be since my hearing is so bad, but whatever answer, I'll take it from there.

    01:52-01:58

So percentage of US adults that set New Year's resolutions every year, shout out your guess.

    02:00-02:02

    I heard 68.

    02:02-02:03

We're gonna go with that one.

    02:04-02:06

All right, now we're gonna play card sharks, higher or lower.

    02:06-02:07

    Remember card sharks?

    02:08-02:08

    Some of you do.

    02:09-02:10

    Higher or lower?

    02:10-02:16

Okay, how many people, show of hands, think that it's higher than 68% that set New Year's resolutions every year?

    02:17-02:18

How many people think it's lower?

    02:19-02:23

And you are correct, it is 38.5%.

    02:26-02:31

And look, if you wanna argue these statistics, Erin actually found these and sent them to me, so you can talk to her about that.

    02:33-02:38

Okay, percentage of young adults that make New Year's resolutions.

    02:38-02:45

By the way, the biggest demographic that makes resolutions is the 18 to 34 bracket.

    02:46-02:53

If you're in that bracket, you are in the group that has the highest percentage of people that make New Year's resolutions.

    02:53-02:59

So do you want to guess the percentage of that demographic that makes New Year's resolutions every year?

    02:59-03:06

guess? I heard 50. That's a safe one there. We can go either way, can't we, Bethany?

    03:06-03:17

All right, so how many people think more than 50% of people 18 to 34 make New Year's resolutions? Who thinks it's higher? Okay, who thinks it's lower than 50%?

    03:18-03:30

It is higher. It is 59%. Okay, what percentage of New Year's resolutions are are about exercising more.

    03:31-03:39

The people that make the resolutions, what's the percentage of people that say, "I wanna exercise more in the new year." Shout out a guess.

    03:41-03:43

    I heard 65, we're gonna go with 65.

    03:43-03:45

How many people think it's higher than 65?

    03:46-03:47

How many people think it's lower than 65?

    03:48-03:50

    It is lower, it's 48%.

    03:50-03:51

    That's about half.

    03:53-03:53

    That's about half.

    03:54-03:59

The rest of us are like, I'm just gonna sit on the couch and wait for Jesus to return.

    04:01-04:05

Okay, percentage of people that quit in the first week.

    04:06-04:06

    In the first week.

    04:07-04:09

Oh, how I admire your perseverance.

    04:10-04:12

Percentage of people that quit in the first week.

    04:12-04:13

    Shout out a guess.

    04:15-04:17

You have to do that again, I didn't hear anything.

    04:18-04:19

    I heard 80.

    04:20-04:23

Okay, percentage of people that quit in the first week.

    04:23-04:25

How many people think it's more than 80?

    04:26-04:29

A few of you, how many people think it's less than 80?

    04:29-04:32

There is hope for humanity, there's less than 80.

    04:33-04:35

    It is 23%.

    04:36-04:39

But even then, come on, that's pretty bad.

    04:42-04:46

One out of four made it the first week.

    04:46-04:50

Okay, what's the percentage of people that make it past the first month?

    04:51-04:54

Making it past the first month, shout out a guess.

    04:55-04:57

10, I heard 10, first and clear, whoever that was.

    04:58-04:58

    That was perfect.

    04:59-05:04

Okay, percentage of people that make it past the first month, who thinks it's more than 10%?

    05:05-05:07

How many people think it's less than 10%?

    05:08-05:10

    It is 36%.

    05:13-05:15

All right, here's the last one.

    05:15-05:16

    It's a big one.

    05:19-05:21

I don't mean like the percentage is big, or is it?

    05:21-05:23

    I'm not leading you.

    05:24-05:27

It's just a very interesting statistic to me.

    05:28-05:31

It's percentage of people that successfully keep their New Year's resolutions.

    05:33-05:35

That they keep them all year.

    05:35-05:42

Percentage of people, they made it, and then at the end of the year, they're standing tall.

    05:42-05:43

    Shout out a guess.

    05:44-05:46

    I heard 12, did you say 12?

    05:46-05:48

    Okay, 12.

    05:48-05:50

How many people think it's more than 12?

    05:53-05:54

How many people think it's less than 12?

    05:55-05:57

    Yeah, you would be correct.

    05:57-05:59

    It is 9%.

    06:04-06:06

That's actually a lot higher than I thought it was gonna be.

    06:07-06:14

All right, on the top of your outline, goal for 2024, I want you to take a moment and write something down.

    06:16-06:19

As you look forward to the new year, it's New Year's Eve, we're turning the calendar.

    06:20-06:25

As you look forward to the new year, what goal do you have for this coming year?

    06:27-06:31

And if you're like, I have more than one, just write down your biggest one, okay?

    06:31-06:33

Or the one that came to your mind immediately.

    06:33-06:41

Just write down a goal that you had, or have, excuse me, for 2024.

    06:45-06:46

    Now we all got plans.

    06:49-07:01

and there's nothing wrong with making plans, but you can make plans in the wrong way.

    07:03-07:06

And that's where we're going in the next section of James.

    07:08-07:17

This is how to make your plans in a way that not only honors God, but acknowledges God in all things.

    07:19-07:25

All right, so at the top of your outline, how to craft your five-year plan.

    07:26-07:32

And I checked in the first service that the young people are still making their five-year plans.

    07:32-07:35

I wasn't sure when I put this together if that was still a thing.

    07:36-07:40

I remember when it was a thing, but I've been told it's still a thing, people making their five-year plans.

    07:40-07:54

So if you're like, hey, I'm one of these hip youngsters making my five-year plan, well, you're in the right place because today we're going to let God's word show you how to make your five-year plan.

    07:57-08:01

Number one, you need to know what you don't know.

    08:04-08:07

You need to know what you don't know.

    08:08-08:09

    Look at verse 13.

    08:10-08:21

He says, "Come now, you who say today or tomorrow "we will go into such and such town "and spend a year there and trade make a profit, stop there.

    08:22-08:37

This phrasing would have been very familiar to the Jews in that day, because a lot of the Jews were businessmen who would travel and they would find strategic locations and they'd set up a business.

    08:37-08:49

And in those days, it could take a year or more of executing.

    08:50-08:51

So it was a long process.

    08:52-08:57

And I know that's hard for us to understand because we live in a day, I mean, it happens to me all the time.

    08:57-09:07

I'll be driving somewhere and it's like a field and I'll drive by that exact same address, like a week later, $5 generals right there.

    09:08-09:10

I'm like, next to each other?

    09:10-09:11

    Yeah, next to each other.

    09:14-09:18

But this business plan that we see here in verse 13 He's actually pretty good.

    09:20-09:22

I mean, he has everything figured out.

    09:23-09:25

    Well, almost everything.

    09:26-09:30

I mean, if you look at the business plan in verse 13, we have the when, today or tomorrow.

    09:30-09:33

We have where, such and such town.

    09:36-09:39

How, we'll spend a year there.

    09:40-09:45

    What, we're gonna trade, right?

    09:45-09:47

And why, we have that figured out.

    09:47-09:53

to make a profit, no problem with what's there at all.

    09:54-09:58

    The problem is what's missing.

    09:59-09:59

    It's the who.

    10:02-10:03

You're gonna see this as we go through the text.

    10:03-10:10

The problem with this business plan is God is nowhere mentioned in the plan.

    10:11-10:13

You see, their sin was not engaging in business.

    10:14-10:20

but their sin was they were counting on the future without any acknowledgement of God whatsoever.

    10:22-10:25

    And listen, planning is great.

    10:26-10:36

I don't want anybody leaving here this morning going, "Okay, what I learned in church today "is it's a sin to make plans, so I'm not ever making plans." That is not the message at all.

    10:37-10:38

    Planning is great.

    10:39-10:49

But, Making plans without acknowledging the sovereignty of God is presumptuous.

    10:51-10:54

That's the message that James is driving home.

    10:57-11:02

So first thing James tells us is you need to know what you don't know.

    11:04-11:10

Like, wait a second, how can I know something that I don't know?

    11:10-11:11

    And I would say, right.

    11:12-11:13

    That's correct.

    11:15-11:23

You're like, "Well, what don't I know?" You see, there's some things that you are unaware of that you need to realize that you are unaware of.

    11:24-11:26

You need to know what you don't know.

    11:27-11:31

The first thing you don't know is this, letter A, you don't know what is going to happen tomorrow.

    11:32-11:33

    Look at verse 14.

    11:35-11:44

He says, "Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring." That's the first thing you need to know that you don't know is you don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow.

    11:45-11:52

And his whole passage here, you have to think that James was thinking about Proverbs 27 one.

    11:53-12:00

When he wrote this section, Proverbs 27 one says, do we have that one or did I not put that one on?

    12:00-12:01

    Oh, there we go, there.

    12:01-12:25

It says, "Do not boast about tomorrow, "for you do not know what a day may bring." You see, the first problem with trying to plan without thinking of the Lord, you don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.

    12:29-12:32

Life changes in an instant, doesn't it?

    12:33-12:34

    Think about that.

    12:38-12:44

Whether it's more positive sounding things, life changes in an instant.

    12:44-12:50

You know, your wife calls and says, "Hey, I was at the doctor and he confirmed I am pregnant." Life changes in an instant.

    12:52-13:00

Or you get that call, "Hey, that promotion you put in for, "you're getting it and you're being transferred.

    13:00-13:04

"You're gonna be working in Texas." What, why?

    13:05-13:07

Life changes in an instant, doesn't it?

    13:10-13:28

Also for the not so positive things, positive sounding things, you know, maybe it's, hey, I did have that doctor's appointment and they said it is cancer and it's fast spreading and they have to start treatment immediately.

    13:31-13:32

    Life changes in an instant.

    13:36-13:39

Or, "Honey, I got a memo at work today.

    13:39-13:41

"They're downsizing, they're eliminating my position.

    13:44-13:47

"And I'm done." Life changes in an instant.

    13:51-13:59

Or you get that phone call, "I'm so sorry to tell you, "there's been a terrible accident." Life changes in an instant.

    14:02-14:09

James here has us stop and reflect on how well we are doing in the sovereignty department.

    14:11-14:12

    How's your sovereignty been?

    14:14-14:16

    My sovereignty has been lousy.

    14:18-14:19

    My sovereignty has been horrible.

    14:21-14:29

There's so much in my life that I thought was gonna turn out one way, and it didn't, and I thought I could control it.

    14:29-14:34

and I couldn't, and I look at the health of my son.

    14:38-14:40

I look at even the life of this church.

    14:40-14:48

I think back to winter of 2019, around the spring of 2020.

    14:50-14:52

I remember the elders had all these plans.

    14:52-14:57

We sat down, we had all these plans for the church, and then COVID hit, you remember COVID?

    14:59-15:03

And that just completely changed everything.

    15:08-15:10

    My sovereignty hasn't been great.

    15:11-15:13

And if you're honest, yours probably hasn't been either.

    15:14-15:15

You don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow.

    15:17-15:23

Another thing that you need to know that you don't know, the letter B, you don't know if you'll have it tomorrow.

    15:23-15:23

    How about that?

    15:25-15:27

You don't know if you'll have it tomorrow.

    15:31-15:33

Look at the rest of verse 14.

    15:34-15:35

He says, "What is your life?

    15:37-15:47

For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes." You don't know if you'll have it tomorrow.

    15:48-15:50

    Mist, right?

    15:50-15:58

Like a cold day, you go outside and (blows) You see the vapor and it's gone.

    16:00-16:02

And James reminds us that's our lives.

    16:03-16:04

    We are here and gone.

    16:07-16:12

I had a funeral on Friday, two days ago, for a lady from my old church.

    16:12-16:17

Her name was Marian, and 91 years old.

    16:18-16:21

And they said she was extremely active all the way to the end.

    16:22-16:26

She has an amazing family, great life.

    16:26-16:28

She loved the Lord, had a strong faith.

    16:28-16:31

Despite the hardship she faced, she was such an incredible testimony.

    16:32-16:36

And I thought, you know, that's like storybook, honestly.

    16:37-16:41

Lived to be in my 90s, active all the way up to the very end, surrounded by family.

    16:43-16:45

    But that's not the usual.

    16:48-16:49

    It's just not.

    16:52-16:57

And James's point here is, hey, you can make plans for tomorrow and you don't know if you have it tomorrow.

    16:58-17:04

So as you're putting your five-year plan together, you might wanna take note of that.

    17:08-17:11

And you know, truthfully, it's a huge blessing to not know what's gonna happen, right?

    17:13-17:19

Sometimes I think, boy, I'd really like to know what's gonna happen in my life or my family's life for the life of this church.

    17:20-17:22

I just said that to Pastor Taylor a week or two ago.

    17:22-17:30

I said, I'm so curious what God's gonna provide for this church, you know, facilities wise, as we're on that track.

    17:30-17:34

And boy, there's sometimes I think I'd love to know.

    17:37-17:38

But it's such a blessing that we don't.

    17:40-17:41

    Because think about it.

    17:42-17:50

If you knew that in April, You are gonna land the dream job, the job that you've always wanted.

    17:52-17:55

You would be discontent every day until then.

    17:56-18:02

You'd be thinking, can't wait till April, can't wait till April, can't, and there's nothing wrong looking forward to stuff, but you would never enjoy the present.

    18:03-18:06

You would never be like, what does God have for me here and now?

    18:06-18:11

You'd be so fixated on that that you'd miss the blessing of today.

    18:13-18:15

It's good that we don't know what's gonna happen.

    18:15-18:18

Another, what if it's something not so good?

    18:19-18:25

What if you knew for sure in April that one of your kids was gonna be in a terrible accident?

    18:28-18:36

You would be so consumed with stress and worry and the anxiety every single day.

    18:39-18:44

So we don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow, God does.

    18:47-18:48

    I think that's a blessing.

    18:50-18:53

James says, "Hey, when you craft your five-year plan, "first of all, you need to know what you don't know.

    18:56-19:02

"Secondly, you need to stop the self-confidence." Stop with the self-confidence.

    19:04-19:06

Look at verses 15 and 16.

    19:07-19:21

He says, "Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." We're gonna get back to that verse.

    19:23-19:24

But I want us to look at for a couple of minutes here.

    19:25-19:25

    Look at verse 16.

    19:26-19:31

James says, "As it is, you boast in your arrogance.

    19:33-19:39

All such boasting is evil." Stop there.

    19:39-19:43

Verse 16, that's the other side of the coin from the previous point.

    19:43-19:59

You see, on one hand, thinking you're sovereign, making your plans without God, on one hand, you're ignoring God's plans for your life, but on the other, you're bragging about your own.

    20:02-20:16

Now, this Greek phrasing here where he says, "Boast in your arrogance," it's literally this, "A loud mouth bragging about something he's not able to do." That's what that means.

    20:17-20:19

A loud mouth bragging about something he's not able to do.

    20:20-20:25

And I think back to the best illustration of this is like the old snake oil salesman.

    20:25-20:27

You remember the snake oil salesman?

    20:27-20:29

Be like, "Ladies and gentlemen, step right up here.

    20:29-20:30

    "Step right up here.

    20:31-20:32

    "We've got this magic tonic.

    20:32-20:40

"You drink this, your hair will grow three feet "by the end of the week, guaranteed." You're like, "That can't possibly be true, but he sounds so sure of himself.

    20:41-20:42

    He's a loud mouth.

    20:43-20:45

He's boasting about something that he can't do.

    20:46-20:48

And that's exactly what James is saying here.

    20:49-20:51

When you're like, well, I'm gonna do this, and I'm gonna do that, and I'm gonna do this.

    20:52-20:54

He goes, you're no better than the snake oil guy.

    20:55-20:57

You're boasting about something that you can't do.

    20:59-21:06

You're self-confidently making your plans, and you never give this a thought.

    21:07-21:12

What if God has a different plan for me?

    21:13-21:14

    You know, think about that.

    21:17-21:26

What if I wanna do this, but what if God in his sovereignty says, "No, no, no, I have something different I want you to do." That thought just isn't even in your head.

    21:30-21:36

And you're planning, here's the problem, you can't miss this, you're planning as if you're in charge.

    21:37-21:46

And you have to see here, he says, all such boasting is, what does it say in verse 16?

    21:47-21:50

Evil, all such boasting is evil.

    21:52-21:53

    I'm speaking of Greek.

    21:53-21:57

That's the same word that's used to describe Satan.

    21:59-22:02

    It's exalting yourself above God.

    22:02-22:06

All such boasting is exalting yourself above God.

    22:10-22:11

Just stop here for a second.

    22:12-22:19

Because I know right now, there are people here that are like, Pastor Jeff, I think you're laying it on a little thick.

    22:21-22:23

I mean, is it really that bad?

    22:24-22:33

Okay, so I make plans, and I don't always really stop and consider what the Lord might want for, is it really that big of a deal?

    22:33-22:36

And I would say, first of all, God says it's a big deal.

    22:37-22:37

    Right?

    22:38-22:40

    You're like arrogant and evil.

    22:40-22:42

    Isn't that overstating the thing?

    22:44-22:47

    Like, it sounds pretty intense.

    22:47-22:58

And I mean, when I think of sin, I think of like murder or like, you know, stealing from someone or like committing adultery.

    22:58-23:00

Like those are the serious sins.

    23:00-23:03

This seems like pretty minor leagues, doesn't it?

    23:03-23:06

I mean, doesn't this seem kind of like what you're so fired up about?

    23:09-23:15

And I'll be honest with you, I've been working on this sermon and studying this for a couple of weeks.

    23:20-23:25

And that was one of the things that I kind of got fixated on.

    23:26-23:29

Like arrogant and evil to do this.

    23:31-23:36

Like this sounds like this is such a serious thing to God.

    23:38-23:39

    I'm like, why?

    23:40-23:42

I mean, I see that it is, but why?

    23:46-23:48

I spent a lot of time thinking about that.

    23:52-23:56

And I was reminded of Numbers chapter 20.

    23:58-23:59

    A little quick flashback here.

    23:59-24:06

Numbers chapter 20, Old Testament, Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt to the land that God promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    24:06-24:10

And you get to Numbers chapter 20, they end up at this place called Meribah, and there's no water.

    24:12-24:16

And you know what Israel did whenever there was any kind of adversity.

    24:17-24:23

Oh, you brought us out here to die, and there's no water, and we don't have any figs.

    24:24-24:26

And I'm just like, what do the figs have to do with anything?

    24:26-24:27

    But that's what they said.

    24:27-24:30

And so they start like losing it, right?

    24:30-24:40

And the Bible says that Moses goes before the Lord and God says, okay, Moses, I'm paraphrasing this part.

    24:40-24:42

We're gonna actually read the text here in a second.

    24:42-24:48

But God says, all right, Moses, I want you to speak to the rock and it's gonna yield water.

    24:49-24:52

All right, now pick up in verse 10 through 12.

    24:53-24:56

It says, "Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly "together before the rock.

    24:57-25:09

"And he said to them, 'Here now, you rebels, "'shall we bring water for you out of this rock?' "And Moses lifted up his hand "and struck the rock with his staff twice.

    25:10-25:12

    "And water came out abundantly.

    25:13-25:55

"And the congregation drank and their livestock." Like the end, it says, "And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 'Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I've given them.'" So why did God disqualify Moses and Aaron from entering the promised land?

    25:56-26:00

Now you see, there's some scholars that say it was purely over the method.

    26:01-26:04

God said to speak and Moses struck the rock.

    26:05-26:08

He didn't do it the way God said, and that's a fact.

    26:08-26:10

Moses did not do it the way that God said.

    26:11-26:13

    I don't think that's the main issue.

    26:14-26:16

And some people say, "Moses lost his temper.

    26:16-26:23

"You know, he hit the rock twice." And I think that's part of it, but I don't even think that's the main issue.

    26:23-26:25

Can we put those verses back up, please, for a second?

    26:28-26:29

    Thank you very much.

    26:29-26:32

I think the text shows us what the issue is.

    26:32-26:36

Look down, like third line up, what God says to Moses.

    26:36-26:51

He says, oh, fourth line up, "Because you do not believe in me, "to uphold me as holy." Like, what was he talking about?

    26:52-26:54

I want you to look again at what Moses said.

    26:55-26:57

Look really close and see if you see a problem.

    26:58-27:05

Moses said, "Here now, you rebels, "shall we bring water for you out of this rock?" Somebody tell me, what's the problem with that question?

    27:07-27:09

You caught that right away, didn't you?

    27:10-27:14

    Problem, we, we, we.

    27:16-27:18

    What's this we stuff?

    27:20-27:30

Moses says, "I have to keep giving you water?" And God's like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    27:33-27:34

    Moses, you never did.

    27:36-27:44

That was all God's power." But Moses did something that if we're honest, we tread there sometimes.

    27:45-27:47

Moses put himself in the place of God.

    27:48-27:51

That's why God said, "You didn't uphold me as only.

    27:52-27:55

"You were supposed to say, 'Israel, God has all the power.

    27:56-27:57

    "'God gets all the glory.

    27:58-28:14

"'All praise goes to God.' "And Moses, you stepped in that place "and said, 'Look what I'm doing for you.'" God says, "I won't have that." Who do you think you are taking credit for what only God can do?

    28:16-28:21

Like, okay, what does that have to do with James and making plans?

    28:22-28:26

I think it has everything to do with it, because there's the same principle at play here.

    28:30-28:41

When you make plans without regarding God, you're acting just like Moses, trying to take the place of the sovereign.

    28:46-28:52

And in essence, God is saying to you, when you make your plans without Him, God is saying to you, "Who do you think you are?

    28:53-28:54

    Oh, you're making your plans.

    28:55-29:05

Oh, oh, are you sovereign?" asking in essence, you mean you can make and fulfill all your plans regardless of what I want?

    29:06-29:18

The sovereign of the universe in charge of every second that passes, in charge of every molecule that exists, you're gonna make your plans and you're gonna fulfill them and I'm not gonna have any say over that?

    29:21-29:23

Now do you see why James uses the word arrogant?

    29:27-29:39

And I would suggest to you, church, That if God wasn't keen on Moses talking like he's God, then God's not going to be on board with you talking like you're God either.

    29:41-29:43

    So stop the self-confidence.

    29:44-29:50

All right, crafting your five-year plan number three, you need to do whatever God says ASAP.

    29:51-29:52

    ASAP.

    29:54-29:56

    A-S-A-P, that's a hip new term.

    29:57-29:58

It means as soon as possible.

    30:00-30:02

    New, it's new.

    30:04-30:06

I heard it in a sermon I was listening to on my eight track.

    30:10-30:12

You need to do whatever God says ASAP.

    30:13-30:14

    Look at verse 17.

    30:15-30:17

    So whatever, excuse me.

    30:18-30:25

So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

    30:30-30:41

See, when we say sin, we think of doing the wrong thing, like lying and stealing, like that.

    30:43-30:45

But sin is more than that.

    30:45-30:53

Sin is also knowing what you need to do and just not doing it.

    30:55-30:58

That's called a sin of omission.

    31:00-31:03

Doing the wrong thing, that's a sin of commission.

    31:04-31:07

Not doing the right thing is a sin of omission.

    31:07-31:24

You're like, "Why is it in this context?" James is talking to people who know today what God wants them to do, and they presume on the future.

    31:26-31:27

    I'll do it later.

    31:28-31:30

    That's what he's talking about.

    31:31-31:34

You know today exactly what God wants you to do.

    31:38-31:39

    I'll do it later.

    31:40-31:40

    I'll get to it.

    31:46-31:49

And I think this is the type of sin that is so prevalent in the church.

    31:51-31:53

Knowing what you need to do and just not doing it.

    31:55-31:59

You know, there are people sitting in church, they're saying, "You know, I'm gonna repent.

    32:00-32:04

"I realized I shouldn't be doing this, "and I'm gonna repent.

    32:08-32:16

"Repentance is the right thing, "and I'm gonna do it tomorrow." Or, "You know, I'm involved in this relationship.

    32:16-32:17

"I shouldn't be in this relationship.

    32:17-32:18

    "I know it's wrong.

    32:18-32:20

"It's wrong for me, it's wrong for the other person.

    32:20-32:36

"It's a wrong relationship that I'm in, "and I'm gonna break it off tomorrow." I need to stop wasting time.

    32:37-33:04

So much of my time is just spent with meaningless time-wasting activities, and I'm gonna be more intentional about glorifying God with the way I spend my time, "I'm gonna get to that tomorrow." Or you say, "I'm gonna get more serious "about my walk with the Lord.

    33:05-33:21

"I realize prayer is important "and I haven't been praying like I need to, "and I'm gonna carve out time, make prayer a priority, "and I'm gonna make time in the Word a priority, "and you know what, starting tomorrow, It's gonna be a whole new way of living for me.

    33:23-33:26

Tomorrow, new leaf and all that.

    33:29-33:31

I'm gonna start giving to the church.

    33:31-33:34

I really haven't been, but you know what?

    33:34-33:38

It's all God's and God promised to bless it and it's an act of obedience.

    33:38-33:42

I'm gonna, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow I'm gonna start giving.

    33:43-33:44

Wait, I don't get paid tomorrow.

    33:45-33:46

    paycheck I'm gonna start giving.

    33:48-34:01

Or, you know, I know as the church is growing and there are so many kids back there and needs on the worship team and security and hospitality and facility, there's just so many areas.

    34:01-34:04

    I'm gonna step up tomorrow.

    34:10-34:12

    See, that's a sin.

    34:14-34:26

to sin when you know exactly what God wants you to do, and you know exactly what God wants you to do, and you say, "I'll get to it tomorrow.

    34:27-34:42

"You know, when I start my diet, I'm gonna get to it." Putting off what God wants you to do is sin, and when God brings some point of obedience to your mind, you need to get on that.

    34:44-34:45

    ASAP.

    34:47-34:48

    Right, ASAP.

    34:51-34:58

You know, we pray in the Lord's prayer, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come.

    34:59-35:00

    What's the next part?

    35:02-35:03

    They will be done.

    35:04-35:05

    Okay, they will be done.

    35:05-35:06

And then what's the next phrase?

    35:06-35:07

    How's that go?

    35:08-35:09

On earth as it is in heaven.

    35:10-35:11

How do you think God's will is done in heaven?

    35:12-35:13

How do you think it's done?

    35:14-35:25

Do you think God ever says to an angel, "Hey, assignment, this is exactly what I need you to do." And the angel's like, "Yeah, sorry, Almighty.

    35:25-35:30

"I have a lunch appointment "and I'm gonna book the rest of the day.

    35:31-35:33

"Actually, this whole week's not good.

    35:33-35:38

"How about next Thursday?" Do you think that happens ever?

    35:39-35:39

    Do you?

    35:40-35:41

    Of course not.

    35:41-35:50

When God says, "Hey, this needs done," the angel's like, "Poof, gone." Do you realize that's what we're praying for when we say your will be done on earth as it is in heaven?

    35:51-35:55

That when God tells you to do something, you should be on it like the angel.

    35:55-35:57

Okay, now, I'll get on it right now.

    36:00-36:06

I read a few years ago, I read this sermon from Charles Spurgeon.

    36:08-36:14

And this just always stuck with me.

    36:15-36:18

He was speaking of a recently deceased friend of his.

    36:19-36:23

He had a friend, his name was William Olney, O-L-N-E-Y.

    36:24-36:30

But listen to what Charles Spurgeon said about his friend who had just passed.

    36:31-36:36

Spurgeon said, "His life cannot be said to be unfinished.

    36:38-36:43

All is finished as if he knew he was going to die.

    36:44-36:48

Spurgeon said, this man died as if he knew he was gonna die right then.

    36:48-36:51

So he made sure he finished everything in his life.

    36:51-36:52

    Everything was done.

    36:54-37:03

And I gotta tell you, the first place I looked was at myself to say, could that be said about me?

    37:08-37:08

    Now it's your turn.

    37:11-37:12

Could that be said about you?

    37:14-37:25

If this was your last day on earth, and it could be, if this was your last day on earth, would we look at your life and say, you know what?

    37:25-37:31

She lived like she knew this was coming and everything is finished.

    37:34-37:35

Or are there going to be a lot of loose ends?

    37:37-37:38

    Like, wow, wow.

    37:40-37:42

She so is not ready for this.

    37:46-37:51

Are there any broken relationships in your life that you need to reach out to?

    37:53-37:55

Maybe you need to send a text, give a call.

    38:00-38:01

    Don't leave it unfinished.

    38:04-38:07

Is there someone maybe that you took advantage of that you need to make restitution to.

    38:11-38:12

    Don't leave anything unfinished.

    38:16-38:23

Is there some kind of addiction that you just need to like, no, it's over, done.

    38:24-38:27

Bottle of something that needs to be dumped down the drain.

    38:33-38:36

Do you need to cry out to Jesus for the salvation that he gives.

    38:37-38:46

There's people that are sitting here and there's people I'm sure watching this stream that are church goers but not Christ believers, not born again Jesus disciples.

    38:47-38:50

And listen, we talk about making plans.

    38:51-38:54

It doesn't, nothing you do matters until you do that.

    38:55-38:56

    You realize that.

    38:57-39:05

The most important thing you will ever do is bow your knee to Jesus Christ, to believe that he died to take away your sin.

    39:06-39:08

He rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    39:10-39:12

That's the most important thing that needs to happen.

    39:14-39:16

Like, yeah, I'm gonna get serious about him.

    39:16-39:18

    You gotta do that today.

    39:20-39:23

Because James says you put it off, that's sin.

    39:24-39:25

    It's sin.

    39:27-39:31

So we're sitting here today talking about the five-year plan.

    39:31-39:34

You know what, forget the five-year plan.

    39:35-39:37

Maybe we need to think about our five-minute plan.

    39:38-39:40

What do I need to do in the next five minutes?

    39:43-39:51

And whatever you know that God wants you to do, get on that ASAP, right?

    39:52-39:58

And number four, finally, you need to acknowledge God has the final say.

    39:59-40:01

We're gonna go back to verse 15.

    40:03-40:05

Because really this is the whole thing, right?

    40:06-40:09

This is the crux of the matter here.

    40:09-40:10

Verse 15, look at it again.

    40:11-40:12

    Instead, here it is.

    40:12-40:28

Instead, you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." So that your plans for 2024, the thing you wrote on the top of your outline here, your plans.

    40:29-40:36

When you wrote that down, how much did you stop and consider, what does God want me to do?

    40:37-40:38

Did you think about that when you wrote that down?

    40:39-40:40

    Like, what does God want?

    40:44-40:48

Because the believer, the Christ follower lives by this.

    40:48-40:51

God is at the center of all my plans.

    40:54-41:00

And we have to live with a constant commitment to the contingency of the will of God.

    41:02-41:19

We have to live church like, hey, we're making plans, but if God changes the plans or God has a different idea than I did, we're going with his, because God has the final say.

    41:21-41:23

Paul got this, real quick, real quick.

    41:24-41:40

Paul got this, you see this, Acts 18, 21, as he was leaving Ephesus, he says, "I will return to you again if God wills." 1 Corinthians 4, 19, "I will come to you soon if the Lord wills." 1 Corinthians 16, verses five through seven, look at how he talks about his travel plans.

    41:41-41:43

He definitely wrote in pencil, not pen.

    41:44-41:57

But he says, "I will visit you after passing through Macedonia, for I intend to pass through Macedonia and perhaps will stay with you or even spend the winter, so that you may help me on my journey wherever I go.

    41:58-42:06

For I do not wanna see you now just in passing, I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits.

    42:06-42:07

    See that?

    42:09-42:13

That we should be a people of conviction that my life is in God's hands.

    42:17-42:30

And I can say, you know what, I hope to do this, and I plan to do this, but if God and his providence and his sovereignty changes the plan, I'm doing that instead, because God has the final say.

    42:31-42:35

And really any plans that we make should be about God's glory, right?

    42:36-42:38

Anything we do should be about God's glory.

    42:39-42:49

And if our lives take a detour from what we planned, well, then that must be from God, and our goal's still the same, to give God the glory.

    42:52-43:01

So, if our worship team would make their way forward, we gotta watch the expectations, my friends.

    43:03-43:06

We gotta watch the expectations because we get so flustered.

    43:06-43:13

Say, yeah, I was planning on doing this and I wanted to do that and I'm frustrated because I was expecting this.

    43:15-43:18

But you realize, biblically, we should only have one expectation.

    43:21-43:23

    One expectation, it's Philippians 1.20.

    43:25-43:27

You need to carry this expectation with you.

    43:27-43:29

Like, what are you expecting today?

    43:30-43:42

Like Paul, as it is, my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed, but with full courage, now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.

    43:42-43:43

Like, what are you expecting, Paul?

    43:43-43:44

    What are you expecting?

    43:46-43:47

He's like, I'm not gonna be ashamed.

    43:48-44:00

But whether I live or whether I die, whatever happens, may Jesus Christ be honored through me.

    44:01-44:11

So your 2024 plans, whatever you wrote here, it's bad planning.

    44:13-44:14

    Whatever you wrote.

    44:15-44:19

And you're like, "Jeff, that was kind of jerky.

    44:20-44:27

"Like you told us to write that, "then you tell us that we did it wrong." True, you're right.

    44:28-44:29

But it was to teach you a lesson.

    44:30-44:31

    And here's the lesson.

    44:31-44:38

What you got to do now is write right underneath that, if the Lord wills.

    44:42-44:43

    Now it's correct.

    44:45-44:46

and you live by that conviction.

    44:47-44:47

    Let's pray.

    44:49-44:55

Father in heaven, I guess I'm guilty.

    44:56-44:59

I don't think of this as being such a big deal, but you do.

    45:00-45:07

And how many times, Father, have I said thoughtlessly what about my plans without considering what do you want me to do?

    45:09-45:16

Whether it's just the agenda for the day or ministry plans or vacation plans or whatever.

    45:19-45:21

I think it's so flustered when it doesn't happen the way I want.

    45:24-45:25

    This is a big deal.

    45:27-45:32

God, thank you for all the reminders that I'm not sovereign, but you are.

    45:36-45:42

And God, I pray for my brothers and sisters here, that as we draw near to you, we would grow in our trust.

    45:44-46:09

Whatever you want, whatever you want us to do, or more accurately, I guess, whatever you wanna do through us, may we approach every aspect of our lives, in our homes, in our workplaces, in our church, let us approach all of it, all of our planning.

    46:09-46:17

by saying, "If the Lord wills, this is what we'll do." We pray in Jesus' name, amen.
