Questions from the Congregation - Part 8

Note: The time signatures [00:00] below indicate the start of a question if you'd like to skip to a particular one of interest in the audio file.

  1. [04:47] - Q: Do you believe we can get signs, messages from loved ones who die? Can we communicate with them? Can mediums?
    A: See Deut 18:9-12 | Matt 6:9 | John 14:13 | Rom 8:26

  2. [07:30] - Q: My fellow Christian family members continue to make statements that loved ones who have passed are now angels or they're guardian angels & are leaving them signs that they are okay and watching over them. I know that humans and angels are distinctly separated & that we don't become angels. How do I respond or am I wrong?
    A: See Rev 14:13 | Heb 13:2

  3. [11:21] - Q: What do the Jehovah's Witnesses reference from the Bible in that they don't take blood products?

  4. [13:55] - Q: Calvinism, Arminianism, or Molinism? What is Harvest's position on these views?
    A: See Deut 30:19 | 2 Cor 5:20 | John 6:37 | Deut 29:29

  5. [21:05] - Q: Why do some preachers only ever preach about God's love and never about His judgement? (Note: Live from the audience question. The question was not captured on the recording, only the answer was.)
    A: See Deut 30:19 | 2 Cor 5:20 | John 6:37 | Deut 29:29

  6. [23:48] - Q: Can you further explain how God mourns and is saddened with us when tragedy occurs in our lives and how He may not command for these things to happen, but allows it because of the sinful world we live in?
    A: See: John 11:35 - Jesus Wept.

  7. [28:12] - Q: Describe the differences between "death", "sheol", "hades" and "the lake of fire". What does Rev 20:14 mean when it says that death and hades were thrown into the lake of fire?
    A: See: Matt 11:23 | Luke 16:19-23

  8. [35:32] - Q: Being in High School I am constantly surrounded by the "do what you think is right" mentality. That being said, how can I be confident in what the Bible says is right and wrong?
    A: See John 7:17 | Judges 21:25

This question was missed due to time constraints during the service. Pastor Jeff will address this in a blog posting on the website. Check back for a link later.
    Q:
Why did Jesus (in the whole New Testament) not say a single word about being gay but he condemned adultery and many other things. Did Jesus love gay people who were born this way?

  • Mark Ort:

    00:43-00:44

So, Jeff, you had a nice Christmas?

    Mark Ort:

    00:44-00:45

The Miller family had a great Christmas?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:46-00:47

Yes, we had a very nice Christmas.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:47-00:48

    How about the Orts?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:48-00:48

    We did.

    Mark Ort:

    00:48-00:49

    We had a great time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:49-00:51

Were you on naughty list or nice list this year?

    Mark Ort:

    00:52-00:54

You have to ask my family.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:55-00:57

Because I know 2016 was a rough year for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:57-00:59

I just, did he make a rebound this year, Kristen?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:00-01:01

    Okay, all right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:01-01:01

    Well done.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:02-01:02

    Well done.

    Mark Ort:

    01:03-01:04

    Well, um.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:04-01:05

Did you get anything fun for Christmas?

    Mark Ort:

    01:07-01:08

    I got this sweater.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:08-01:09

    That sweater is really fun.

    Mark Ort:

    01:10-01:10

    Yeah.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:11-01:13

Especially when it's like, you know, two degrees outside.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:13-01:14

    It's really fun.

    Mark Ort:

    01:14-01:15

    Yeah, absolutely.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:15-01:16

All right, ask me if I got anything fun.

    Mark Ort:

    01:16-01:17

What did you get fun, Jeff?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:17-01:19

My mother-in-law got me these sweet cakes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:19-01:19

    Aren't they sweet?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:22-01:23

    I'm fishing for compliments.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:23-01:24

    Aren't they sweet?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:24-01:25

    (audience laughing)

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:25-01:26

    Thank you, Mark.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:27-01:29

    No, too late, Mark.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:30-01:32

I'm putting a word in for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:32-01:33

    Nice list, 2018.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:33-01:34

    Okay.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:34-01:36

    Hey, we have Q&A day

    Mark Ort:

    01:36-01:36

    today.

    Mark Ort:

    01:36-01:36

    It

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:36-01:37

    is Q&A day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:37-01:38

    I love Q&A day.

    Mark Ort:

    01:39-01:40

    I love Q&A day myself.

    Mark Ort:

    01:40-01:42

Because I don't have to prepare a sermon, I have to

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:42-01:43

    prepare like eight.

    Mark Ort:

    01:46-01:51

But it's fun though, we do this twice a year or something and it's very fun.

    Mark Ort:

    01:52-01:54

My boys were looking forward to this, they love Q&A day.

    Mark Ort:

    01:55-01:58

And maybe it's because they don't have to sit by me, I'm up here, I don't know.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:00-02:01

    I love Q&A day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:01-02:05

And the reason we do, we talked about this, we were praying in my office before the service.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:06-02:12

And you know why we do this, is it gives confidence to go to God's word for answers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:13-02:17

You know, it's not like, well, we have some questions, but we're not sure it's appropriate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:18-02:20

    God invites the questions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:20-02:26

So that's why we encourage you to ask anything, and we'll hopefully have time to give you opportunity to do that today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:27-02:30

I'm not checking my email, I'm trying to set the timer on my phone.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:30-02:33

How long do we wanna go with Q&A?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:34-02:34

    How long?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:36-02:36

    Two hours?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:38-02:41

Darla, you are on the nice list for the next three years.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:43-02:43

    See?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:46-02:48

I think people should bask in your wisdom, Darla.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:49-02:50

    All right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:50-02:52

We should make this like an auction.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:52-02:54

Two hours, two hours, three hours, three hours, three hours.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:57-02:59

    Is a half hour reasonable?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:01-03:02

    Thank you, Mark.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:03-03:03

    all of a sudden.

    Mark Ort:

    03:04-03:09

We do have a couple of rules that we have for Q&A day.

    Mark Ort:

    03:09-03:10

    Yes, why don't you review

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:10-03:11

the rules that I'm trying to figure out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:12-03:12

    I've only had this

    Mark Ort:

    03:12-03:14

    phone for like two years.

    Mark Ort:

    03:14-03:19

All right, one of the rules is we're gonna read the question as we understand it.

    Mark Ort:

    03:20-03:27

I guess as it was written, but there's one question on here that I have to add a word to, and we'll get to that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:27-03:32

Yeah, we wanna present the questions as they're written because I wouldn't want somebody to be like, well, that wasn't the question that I asked.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:32-03:34

So we're just going to present them as they were written, right?

    Mark Ort:

    03:35-03:35

    Exactly.

    Mark Ort:

    03:35-03:43

And we have a limited amount of time, so if we don't get to any questions, if there's a couple we don't get to, Jeff will write about it on the blog.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:45-03:46

    Yes, I will.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:46-03:47

    I will do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:47-03:48

I will blog whatever we don't get to.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:49-03:50

What sound effect do you want when the timer goes off?

    03:51-03:51

    I

    Mark Ort:

    03:51-03:52

    like your Pac-Man one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:52-03:53

    You like the Pac-Man one?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:53-03:55

Let me see if I can find that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:58-03:59

    Oh, that's my ringtone.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:59-03:59

    There we go.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:00-04:01

    All right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:01-04:01

    All

    04:01-04:02

    right,

    Mark Ort:

    04:02-04:06

so as usual, we have really good questions.

    Mark Ort:

    04:06-04:10

Yeah, we had some really good questions, which I did not appreciate

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:10-04:12

having you do that much extra work between Christmas and New Year's.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:13-04:15

I'm totally, you realize I'm kidding, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:15-04:18

You realize, you're like, okay, stop kidding, you're not funny, okay.

    Mark Ort:

    04:18-04:21

Not to put any extra pressure on you, but we want really good answers too.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:21-04:22

    Well,

    Mark Ort:

    04:23-04:23

    God's word

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:23-04:24

    has them.

    Mark Ort:

    04:25-04:25

    That's right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:25-04:26

    God's word has them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:26-04:28

I'll stop kidding around mostly for now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:28-04:28

    Okay,

    Mark Ort:

    04:29-04:29

    so you ready to go?

    Mark Ort:

    04:30-04:30

    Yeah.

    Mark Ort:

    04:30-04:33

All right, timer starting. Timer's on.

    Mark Ort:

    04:33-04:35

All right. I should have put my glasses on before.

    Mark Ort:

    04:35-04:36

    Yeah,

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:36-04:38

well, hang on. Start restarting the timer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:39-04:43

Hey, I'm not, no, I'm not, no. That 15 seconds is on you, Mark.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:43-04:44

That's not, we're not taking that out of Q&A.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:44-04:45

Sounds good. - Okay, you ready now?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:45-04:46

    Yeah, we're ready. - Okay, you're good.

    Mark Ort:

    04:47-04:47

    All right, first question.

    Mark Ort:

    04:47-04:52

Do you believe we can get signs and messages from loved ones who die?

    Mark Ort:

    04:52-04:55

Can we communicate with them? Can mediums?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:56-05:05

That is a really good question. And the answer, first of all, "Do you believe we can get the signs?" No, because God condemns the practice in his Word.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:05-05:08

And if you're taking notes, you wanna jot some references down.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:08-05:13

God condemns the practice, Deuteronomy 18, verses nine through 12, among other places.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:15-05:27

But when you look at the Bible, the Bible only prescribes one form of, whether you wanna call it prayer, is what we call it, or supernatural communication.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:28-05:30

There's only one way the Bible describes that, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:30-05:40

And it's to the Father, Matthew 6, 9, through the Son, John 14, 13, and with the Holy Spirit, Romans 8, 26.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:41-05:44

That's the only way God's Word prescribes prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:45-05:48

To the Father, through the Son, and with the Holy Spirit.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:49-05:55

And as far as should we use mediums to communicate with the dead?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:55-05:58

Well, I encourage you to read 1 Samuel 28.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:59-06:01

And do you remember King Saul?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:01-06:06

He looked great as Israel's first king, but the problem was he only looked great.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:06-06:07

He wasn't great on the inside.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:08-06:13

And he wanted to communicate with Samuel who had died at that point, and it didn't end well.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:13-06:16

And spoiler alert, Saul isn't a good example for anything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:17-06:18

We've been studying, haven't we, Kate?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:18-06:21

We've been studying King Saul at home in our Bible stories, haven't we?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:22-06:24

Yeah, so he's not a good example, is he?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:25-06:26

    No, he hasn't.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:27-06:36

So after he tried to communicate with Samuel, Saul ended up being wounded in battle, took his own life, the end of a string of sinful choices by Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:37-06:38

    So what do mediums do?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:39-06:41

Honestly, Mark, I think it's two things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:41-06:42

It's either fake or it's demonic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:43-06:44

I think some of them, they're just charlatans.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:44-06:52

You know, you're gonna message from your grandmother, said it's either fake or it's demonic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:52-07:01

Because if God condemns it, why would he allow a saint that is in heaven to communicate?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:01-07:02

    You know what I mean?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:02-07:07

Like if, like my father, he's in heaven, my earthly father, he's in heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:08-07:16

Why would God allow him to communicate and send messages to me if God's word forbids it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:18-07:19

    No, I don't

    Mark Ort:

    07:19-07:22

believe in messing around with any of that.

    Mark Ort:

    07:22-07:26

And there's one mediator between man and God anyway, right?

    Mark Ort:

    07:26-07:26

    Who's that?

    Mark Ort:

    07:26-07:28

Amen, the man is Christ Jesus.

    Mark Ort:

    07:28-07:28

    Amen.

    Mark Ort:

    07:30-07:31

All right, ready to move on to the second?

    Mark Ort:

    07:31-07:32

    Yes, let's go.

    Mark Ort:

    07:32-07:33

    All right, question number two.

    Mark Ort:

    07:34-07:46

My fellow Christian family members continue to make statements that loved ones who have passed on are now angels or they're guardian angels and are leaving them signs that they are okay and watching over them.

    Mark Ort:

    07:46-07:52

I know that humans and angels are distinctively separated and that we don't become angels.

    Mark Ort:

    07:52-07:55

How do I respond, or am I wrong?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:56-07:59

Actually, whoever wrote this is exactly right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:00-08:04

Humans do not become angels when we die.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:04-08:09

Humans and angels are two completely different types of creation, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:09-08:15

And despite what you've seen in the cartoons, you don't turn into angels.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:15-08:17

And I think cartoons haven't helped with that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:17-08:18

    I like cartoons.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:18-08:20

I get boys that watch cartoons.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:20-08:28

And isn't that depicted in the cartoons You know, like Tom and Jerry, when he's chasing the mouse and he dies, he didn't go to heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:28-08:29

He went to the other place.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:29-08:30

    That was a bad example.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:31-08:32

    But forget that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:32-08:37

But in other cartoons, you know, you die and all of a sudden you're an angel.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:37-08:39

And that's just, that's not true.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:41-08:43

Humans and angels are two different types of creatures.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:43-08:45

    So how do you respond?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:46-08:47

    Tactfully.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:48-08:50

And I would say look for the appropriate time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:50-09:19

Okay, not while we're gathered around for prayer around grandma's casket might not be the best time to hey by the way Well straighten up your theology on the whole angel thing that might not be the best time You have to discern the most appropriate time, and I'm just here's what I would do When the subject came up Like let's say you're like yeah, you know I'm sure you know Grandma's an angel in heaven right now looking down on us, and I would say You know what's funny about that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:19-09:33

Is I grew up thinking that people turned into angels when we died, and I remember in the Methodist church, we were a youth group at Carden City Methodist Church, and I said something to the pastor about turning into an angel when we die.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:34-09:39

That pastor said, "We don't turn into angels when we die." And I remember that completely blew my mind.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:39-09:40

    Did you know that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:41-09:45

So I was like, I had to like study the Bible, and when I studied the Bible, I'm like, you know what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:46-09:48

I was wrong, we don't turn into angels when we die.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:49-09:53

So I think coming alongside the person to say, yeah, I used to think that because I totally did.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:54-09:55

You know, Tom and Jerry had me fooled too.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:55-10:00

And I just come alongside and say, yeah, I used to think that too, but you know what I found out?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:00-10:01

I found out that's not right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:02-10:08

So like the previous answer, people aren't leaving signs for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:09-10:12

You know, people are not your guardian angels.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:13-10:18

According to Revelation 14.13, they are resting from their labors.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:18-10:22

That's why you see on tombstones a lot of time, rest in peace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:22-10:24

I believe that that comes from Revelation 14.13.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:24-10:27

It says the dead are resting from their labors.

    Mark Ort:

    10:29-10:37

One thing, when I read this question, Jeff, I was thinking about how angels manifest themselves sometimes as humans.

    Mark Ort:

    10:37-10:40

We see that in Hebrews 13.2.

    Mark Ort:

    10:40-10:46

Some have entertained angels unawares or without knowing about it, but it doesn't go vice versa.

    Mark Ort:

    10:48-10:50

Humans do not somehow turn into angels.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:50-10:53

Right, God has appeared to us at times.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:54-10:58

The Bible, you know, like refers to the angel of the Lord, especially in the Old Testament.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:58-11:11

Sometimes that was Jesus Christ himself in a pre-incarnate appearance, you know, but the Bible just refers to that as the angel of the Lord, but you're right, they, by all appearances, just look to be human.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:12-11:19

So yeah, angels have taken that appearance, but you don't ever see it the other way around, that humans take on angelic qualities.

    Mark Ort:

    11:21-11:23

Okay, next question, a really good one.

    Mark Ort:

    11:23-11:29

What do the Jehovah's Witnesses reference from the Bible in that they don't take blood products?

    Mark Ort:

    11:30-11:31

    That

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:31-11:33

is a really good question, and I had to do some homework on that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:33-11:38

I actually went straight to the Jehovah's Witnesses website to do some digging around.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:39-11:41

And this is a direct quote, what it says on their website.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:42-11:45

"This is a religious issue rather than a medical one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:45-11:56

"Both the Old and New Testaments clearly command us "to abstain from blood." And then there's some scripture references, Genesis 9, 4, Leviticus 17, 10, Deuteronomy 12, 23, Acts 15, 28, 29.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:57-12:01

"Also, God views blood as representing life," Leviticus 17, 14.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:01-12:08

"So we avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God, "but out of respect for him as the giver of life." There's a problem with that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:08-12:12

The blood restrictions in the Bible are dietary.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:13-12:15

    Okay, it's don't eat blood.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:17-12:27

So when it talks about not taking, I did some more reading on their website, they won't take blood transfusions because the Bible says don't eat blood.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:28-12:36

So I would encourage somebody here today, if you have time on the way home, stop by the Kingdom Hall and explain to them how a blood transfusion works.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:38-12:41

Because you don't drink the blood.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:42-12:42

    Right, doctor?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:42-12:44

I'm shooting from the hip here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:44-12:48

I mean, I'm not a doctor, but you get a blood transfusion, you don't drink it, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:48-12:49

    Okay, all right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:49-12:50

So the Bible says don't drink the blood.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:52-12:54

But the question is, where did they get it from?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:54-12:57

They got it from those references that say to avoid blood.

    Mark Ort:

    12:58-13:00

Have you had Jehovah's Witnesses come to your house?

    13:00-13:01

    Oh yeah,

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:02-13:03

    just a few months ago.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:04-13:04

    A few months ago.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:06-13:16

And we got into a lively discussion on the divinity of Jesus Christ, and this person had some prepared answers for a lot of the Scriptures I shared, except one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:17-13:21

Hebrews 1.8, "God the Father calls God the Son God," and I shared that with him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:21-13:29

And I said, "Now, if God the Father calls Jesus God, what do you think I should call Him?" And he was like, "Yeah,

    13:29-13:30

    God."

    Mark Ort:

    13:30-13:35

So … I've had discussions with Jehovah's Witnesses in the past.

    Mark Ort:

    13:35-13:36

They haven't been to our house recently.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:36-13:38

That's because of where you live.

    13:38-13:39

    (laughing)

    13:39-13:40

    That could be in

    Mark Ort:

    13:40-13:40

    the middle of nowhere.

    Mark Ort:

    13:40-13:41

    They're like, "It's too

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:41-13:42

    far."

    Mark Ort:

    13:43-13:46

But they do have a lot of inconsistencies when they speak to you.

    Mark Ort:

    13:46-13:47

    Oh yeah, they do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:48-13:48

    They do.

    Mark Ort:

    13:49-13:52

But we go back to the Bible for our answers.

    Mark Ort:

    13:52-13:52

    Amen.

    Mark Ort:

    13:52-13:53

    The Bible

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:53-13:54

    has the answers, that's right.

    Mark Ort:

    13:55-13:56

    Okay, next question, Jeff.

    Mark Ort:

    13:59-14:03

Calvinism, Arminianism, or Molinism, what is Harvest's position on these views?

    Mark Ort:

    14:04-14:09

Maybe you can give us a brief overview of what each one is and what our position is.

    Mark Ort:

    14:10-14:10

    I don't know.

    Mark Ort:

    14:11-14:11

    Next question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:12-14:13

    All right, all right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:14-14:16

I'm gonna give a general overview of this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:17-14:31

For those of you that maybe are unfamiliar, I'm gonna make some generalizations and I hope you understand in the context of what we're doing here why I'm overgeneralizing and maybe simplifying the issue 'cause I know some of you probably really spend a lot of time studying this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:32-14:40

And some of you might be hearing this for the first time, so it's hard to meet everybody, but here's the general overview.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:41-14:54

The Calvinist view is mainly leaning on God sovereignly chooses you for salvation, you know, the elect, predestination, leaning heavily on that view.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:54-15:00

The Arminian view leans more towards the man has the power to choose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:01-15:03

It's an emphasis on free will.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:04-15:07

But Molinism, I had to do a little studying and had a pastor friend help me with this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:08-15:13

That is from a 16th century theologian, Louis de Molina.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:15-15:24

It was an attempt to reconcile God's sovereignty and election and man's free will and salvation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:25-15:31

Now this is hard to understand and it's even harder to explain, but we're gonna give it a try, all right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:33-15:42

Basically, in Molinism, it's the belief that God knows what a person or a group of people will choose in any circumstance.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:43-15:46

    He knows what you'll choose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:46-15:51

Like if you were going to get ice cream after church, that's a terrible example.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:51-15:52

Maybe we would go get ice cream.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:53-15:53

    Not

    Mark Ort:

    15:53-15:53

    today, man.

    Mark Ort:

    15:53-15:53

    It's

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:53-15:55

    like negative 17 out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:55-15:55

    You know what sounds good?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:56-15:57

    Ice cream.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:57-15:58

    Maybe we'll go swimming.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:01-16:03

Sorry, I should have thought this out more.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:04-16:10

Okay, so you're going to get ice cream after church since we've already, you know, that horse is out of the barn.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:10-16:14

And God knows that you're gonna pick chocolate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:14-16:14

    He just knows.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:15-16:16

    He knows.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:16-16:33

Now, God didn't make that choice for you, but in God's omniscience, in order for God's sovereign purposes to be established, you choosing chocolate ice cream is part of God's plan.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:34-16:36

Now, he didn't make you choose that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:37-16:42

You could have chosen vanilla or cookie dough or cookies and cream or whatever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:43-16:50

He didn't make you choose that, but according to God's purposes, you needed to choose chocolate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:50-16:57

So, he knows in any hypothetical situation what you are going to choose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:57-17:01

It's basically God is sovereign somehow in and through his omniscience.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:01-17:10

And it's much more complicated than that silly example, but that's the gist of it is trying to reconcile the two.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:10-17:13

So, all that said, what's Harvest's position?

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:13-17:20

Well, the reason the subject is hotly debated is because the Bible teaches both.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:21-17:21

    Right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:23-17:27

For example, I'm just gonna give you, write these scriptures down if you want, you can check these.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:27-17:30

Do you remember Moses in Deuteronomy chapter 30, verse 19?

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:30-17:32

He said, "I set before you life and death.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:34-17:36

"Choose life." You have to make a choice.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:36-17:38

    Remember Joshua, Joshua 24, 15.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:39-17:42

"Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, "but," how's the rest of that go?

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:43-18:01

"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua said, "You gotta make a choice." Jesus said, "Enter through the narrow gate, "because there is a wide gate that leads to destruction, "and those on it are many, and there's a narrow gate "that leads to eternal life, and those on it are few." Jesus was giving the choice.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:01-18:05

What about Paul in 2 Corinthians 5, verse 20?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:06-18:22

He's like, "I am begging you to receive Christ." Paul wasn't like, "Eh, if they're gonna receive Christ, "it's probably because they're elect." He's like, "I am begging you to receive Christ." So there's the whole choice thing, but then you can go back through.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:23-18:25

Some of the same people talked about God choosing you, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:26-18:29

John 6, 37, Jesus talked about that, among other places.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:30-18:37

God says, "I chose you." Paul in Ephesians 1, 11, actually all of Ephesians 1 talking about election and predestination.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:38-18:44

The Bible teaches both, and the reason we get hung up is people wanna go to the extremes on both.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:44-18:52

the extreme Calvinist side, says it doesn't matter what we choose because God's got his mind made up and I'll just do whatever because it doesn't matter.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:52-18:53

    It's very fatalistic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:54-18:56

But then we swing too far on the other side, don't we, Darla?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:56-19:16

And it's just like, we make all the choices and it's sort of almost like God's at my mercy, that God's hoping that I make the right choices and God's up in heaven like, oh, I'm watching Margie right now and I'm watching her life and I sure hope that she makes the right choices but the power is basically on you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:18-19:20

And I don't think either of those are right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:21-19:25

The Bible teaches both in a way that makes sense to God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:26-19:28

And it's sort of like the Trinity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:29-19:35

I can't explain the Trinity, but I believe that God the Father is God, God the Son is God, God the Holy Spirit is God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:36-19:38

I can believe that without explaining it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:38-19:39

And it's the same with this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:39-19:40

I can believe it without explaining it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:41-19:44

There are some things about God that don't make human sense.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:44-19:49

He is omniscient, he is omnipotent, he is sovereign, he lives outside of time and space.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:50-19:59

And I like to sum it up with one simple statement that we say here often at Harvest, is that God is God and I am not, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:59-20:09

I have as much chance of understanding God as a fruit fly can understand an iPhone, honestly.

    Mark Ort:

    20:09-20:11

I don't understand those iPhones very well.

    Mark Ort:

    20:11-20:11

    I don't either.

    20:12-20:13

    (audience laughing)

    20:13-20:14

    I

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:14-20:14

    don't either.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:14-20:38

And I like to think I'm a little smarter than a fruit fly, but I mean, a fruit fly can look at this and maybe recognize it as an object or something, but could it ever grasp the depth that, you know, you can explore all the information in the world and make phone calls and time Q&A day and all the things you can do with this thing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:38-20:42

It's so much deeper than the fruit fly just viewing it as this thing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:42-20:48

So Deuteronomy 29, 29, one of my favorite verses in the Bible says the secret things belong to the Lord.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:48-20:59

There are things about God, Moses was like, "I don't understand God, I speak to God face to face "and I don't understand Him." The rest of that verse says that God has revealed some things that He wants us and our children to know about Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:00-21:04

So let's just work on that and be okay with the fact that there's things about God that we don't understand.

    Mark Ort:

    21:06-21:07

    Very good, thank you Jeff.

    Mark Ort:

    21:08-21:10

Do we wanna take a question from the congregation?

    Mark Ort:

    21:11-21:11

    Do we?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:11-21:13

Does anybody have a question on the spot?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:15-21:16

    Sherry will pass out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:16-21:17

    Where's Sherry?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:17-21:18

    Oh, there you are, Sherry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:18-21:22

Would you take a microphone over to, look, she's got a microphone already.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:22-21:24

Your question, and there's an easy answer for that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:24-21:26

It's because that's what people wanna hear.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:27-21:34

Yeah, the Bible says the time's gonna come when people heap up for themselves teachers that they have itching ears, and they have a pastor that's gonna scratch that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:35-21:49

And we live in a day that tolerance is elevated above truth, to say, "Look, just love, man, just love, just love." And I'm gonna be talking about this next week, Mike, but that's why I'm committed to expository preaching, because it forces me to preach things I wouldn't choose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:50-21:55

If I was just to choose, it'd be like, "Hey, let's talk about grace this week, "and guess what we're gonna talk about next week?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:55-21:55

    "Mercy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:56-21:57

"Guess what we're gonna talk about the week after that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:57-21:57

    "Love.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:58-21:59

"Then the week after that, we're gonna talk about grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:59-22:14

"Then we're gonna talk about how awesome God's love is." And that's what I would want to choose to talk about, But this year on the preaching calendar, we're doing a whole series on NAMM, and the whole series is about God's judgment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:15-22:17

I am not looking forward to that series, I'll be honest with you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:18-22:19

I'm not looking forward to it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:20-22:27

There's nothing thrilling to me about preaching God's wrath, but I have to preach it because I made a commitment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:27-22:36

Remember Acts 20, Paul to the Ephesian elders, "I did not cease to declare to you the whole counsel of God." That's why I'm committed to expository preaching.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:36-22:42

I don't sit in my office and say, "What do I think about preaching this week?" I prepare a calendar a year at a time, ahead of time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:43-22:47

The elders approve it, but going through the scripture, you guys have been with us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:48-22:49

    We've been walking through Acts.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:49-22:50

You guys have been with us a long time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:50-22:54

We have walked through Philippians and Colossians and Mark.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:54-22:59

And that's why we do that, is because I don't wanna shy away from anything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:59-23:00

    We don't talk about that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:00-23:03

We talk about what God's word wants us to talk about.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:03-23:06

That's what we talk about, but I think that's why, Mike.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:06-23:10

I think people preach that because that's what people want to hear.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:11-23:16

I heard that, I had a conversation with a pastor friend last week, was talking about Oprah.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:17-23:19

And I said, "I'll be honest with you, "I don't get Oprah's appeal.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:20-23:25

"I don't get why people just worship Oprah." And he said, "It's because she tells everybody "what they want to hear."

    Mark Ort:

    23:25-23:26

    And she gives stuff away.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:26-23:27

    And she gives stuff away.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:29-23:29

    True.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:31-23:33

I think that's the answer to

    23:33-23:33

    that.

    Mark Ort:

    23:35-23:36

    That's a really good question.

    Mark Ort:

    23:36-23:38

Is there another question before we move on to the next one?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:40-23:41

    Any other questions?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:43-23:47

All right, why don't we move on to, you have more time maybe, well, you got 10 minutes and 20 seconds.

    Mark Ort:

    23:49-24:03

Can you, Jeff, further explain how God mourns and is saddened with us when tragedy occurs in our lives and how he may not command for these things to happen, but allows it because of the sinful world we live in.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:04-24:07

Right, and again, both are true.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:07-24:12

God is sovereign, but we also are affected by our own choices.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:13-24:23

And God allows things to happen, even tragic things, things that are part of living in a fallen and cursed world.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:24-24:33

But I think the heart of this question, if I'm understanding it right, is if God knows everything that's going to happen, why would he still mourn?

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:35-24:39

And I think that's getting to the heart of something that's very important for us to understand about God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:40-24:42

    And it's this, God feels.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:43-24:48

And just because God knows, doesn't mean that God doesn't feel.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:49-24:50

Let me give you a couple examples.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:50-24:52

I'll give you a personal one first.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:53-25:02

Several years ago when I was serving in a different church, I had a staff person tell me, "Hey, I met this guy online.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:03-25:06

"We've been chatting online for about a month, "and we actually met each other twice.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:07-25:11

"He lives near Baltimore, Maryland, "and we're gonna get married.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:12-25:18

"What do you think?" And I said, "I think that's a terrible decision." I said, "You have a little girl.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:19-25:31

"You don't know this guy." "I do know this guy!" I said, "You don't know this guy." I said, "Here's what I recommend." He moves up, gets an apartment, gets a job in the area, and you spend some time getting to know him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:32-25:34

I said, you need to see how this guy interacts with your little girl.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:34-25:35

    I said, you're just a kid.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:37-25:46

And we were blasted about, you know, I don't have the Holy Spirit, and our church doesn't have the Holy Spirit, and we were just, we were flamed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:46-25:57

Like, we were the apostate church, and we didn't know what we were talking about, and she ran off and she got married.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:59-26:01

And two weeks later, he left her, gone.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:04-26:06

And it was like a punch in the gut to me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:06-26:19

I'm like, I still felt, I felt so badly for her in this situation because she had such hopes that this was going to be Prince Charming that was going to come in and deliver her.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:21-26:25

And I knew that was gonna happen, but that hurt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:26-26:27

    Like, come on.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:28-26:33

So do you see, it wasn't like the guy left her, and I'm like, well, I knew that was gonna happen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:33-26:36

    Like, sorry about her luck.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:36-26:37

That's a shot in the gut.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:37-26:48

Like, because this is still a real human being and a daughter with high expectations and the worst kind of hurt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:50-26:52

among the worst kind of hurt that a person can experience.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:54-26:58

So that's a personal example, but I think an even better example is Jesus' example, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:00-27:02

    You look at John 11.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:03-27:09

Remember the story, Lazarus died, and Jesus was taking his sweet old time getting there on purpose?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:10-27:11

    And you know the story.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:11-27:14

Did Jesus know that he was going to resurrect Lazarus?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:14-27:15

    Did he know that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:15-27:16

    Yeah, he did, right, Rich?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:16-27:18

He knew he was gonna resurrect Lazarus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:19-27:23

And he knew it was gonna be an opportunity to teach and he was the resurrection and the life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:24-27:28

But you look at John 11, 35, shortest verse in the Bible, what does it say?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:28-27:29

    Jesus wept.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:30-27:36

Jesus was still overcome with emotion, human emotion, even though he knew.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:36-27:40

If there was ever anybody that didn't need to weep, you would think it'd be Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:40-27:42

I know everything's gonna happen, I'm the Alpha and the Omega.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:43-27:45

I know how this whole thing is gonna shake out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:46-27:47

Even knowing all that though, he felt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:48-27:55

And I think that's a beautiful thing about God, is he feels God's not up in heaven going, turn or burn, I don't care.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:55-27:57

Get right or get left, it doesn't make a difference to me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:58-28:00

    God feels and he cares.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:00-28:03

And we see that in the incarnation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:03-28:06

I think that's one of the most beautiful things about the incarnation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:06-28:08

We see a God who knows and feels and cares.

    Mark Ort:

    28:10-28:11

    Thanks for that, Jeff.

    Mark Ort:

    28:12-28:14

The next question, I'm hoping to learn something here.

    Mark Ort:

    28:15-28:16

    This is a great question.

    Mark Ort:

    28:17-28:22

Describe the differences between death, Sheol, Hades, and the Lake of Fire.

    Mark Ort:

    28:23-28:28

What does Revelation 20.14 mean when it says that death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:29-28:30

Oh, this is a really good question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:30-28:32

All right, if you're taking notes, you want to jot some things down quickly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:33-28:34

    Death just means separation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:35-28:38

We think of physical death, that's separation of body from spirit.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:39-28:43

But it also describes the spiritual state of man, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:43-28:46

that by nature we are separated from God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:47-29:00

That's why I remind you in the Garden of Eden, you remember God told Adam not to eat off the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, because he said, "When you eat off of it," the Hebrew is literally dying, you will die.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:01-29:04

It's going to begin a process that's going to end in a finish line.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:05-29:07

That's why we're all wearing out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:08-29:19

That's why we're all getting old and out of shape and gray hair, and that's why that's happening, is because dying, you will die.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:19-29:21

    But death is separation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:22-29:25

Like I said, spiritual, we're separated from God because of sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:25-29:26

    What's Sheol?

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:27-29:32

In the Old Testament, I'm gonna read my notes here, so make sure I get the wording right here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:32-29:36

In the Old Testament, Sheol specifically was just like the grave.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:37-29:40

And it was very mysterious in the Old Testament.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:40-29:50

It was the idea of when somebody dies, we know that they still exist somewhere, but they are in what lies beyond.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:50-29:52

And that was sort of a catch-all term, sheol.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:52-29:54

    It's the grave.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:54-29:55

    He's gone.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:55-29:56

    He went to another place.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:58-30:03

It was a mystery because they didn't have the fuller revelation that we possess.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:04-30:08

Some translations of the Bible, sheol is translated hell, and that's a terrible translation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:08-30:10

    Sheol did not mean hell.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:11-30:13

You see, we have the whole Bible.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:13-30:18

We have Jesus and Paul and John who told us more about what happens beyond.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:19-30:20

    They didn't have that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:20-30:22

It's like somebody dies and they go somewhere.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:23-30:25

And that was what Sheol is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:26-30:26

    What's Hades?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:28-30:30

    Hades was also the grave.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:30-30:33

It was the unseen world, like Acts 2.31.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:34-30:38

But sometimes in the New Testament, it refers to a place of torment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:38-30:42

like Matthew 11.23 and Luke 16.23.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:44-30:49

It's the intermediate state between death and resurrection.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:49-31:00

What I mean is the Bible in Revelation talks about new heavens, new earth, talks about lake of fire, we'll get to that in a second, but something happens in between the consummation of all things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:01-31:14

And if you read Luke, just jot this reference down, Luke 16, verses 19 through 23, In fact, I'm going to read that real quick because this is so important for us to not gloss over.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:15-31:32

There was a rich man, this is Jesus speaking, there was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen who feasted sumptuously every day and at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus covered with sores who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table more even the dogs came and licked his sores.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:32-31:37

The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:37-31:38

    That's heaven, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:38-31:39

    he was next to Abraham.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:40-31:58

It says, "The rich man also died and was buried, "and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes "and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side." So according to Jesus, there is a place of torment that exists before the final lake of fire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:59-32:05

And when you look at Hades in the New Testament, like I said, sometimes it's a translated grave.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:05-32:09

Like in 1 Corinthians 15, 55, You gotta sort of take it in its context.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:10-32:11

Context here is very obvious, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:11-32:13

Context in 1 Corinthians 15, very obvious.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:14-32:20

So, but typically it means the grave, sometimes with the connotation of the place of suffering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:21-32:27

Usually in the New Testament, by the way, Hades is translated 11 times in the New Testament.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:29-32:36

12 times though in the New Testament, there's a place of future torment that is referred to as Gehenna.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:37-32:49

And that's the Valley of Hinnom, that's south of Jerusalem, that's where they took all the filth and the dead animals and they burn it, it was a place of constant burning and that was often used as the picture to describe hell.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:49-32:52

So Lake of Fire, what's the Lake of Fire?

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:52-32:56

That is Revelation chapter 20, the Bible calls that a second death.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:56-32:59

This is a place that God prepared for the devil and his angels.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:00-33:14

That everyone who has rejected God's grace, everyone who has rejected the love and mercy of Jesus Christ, says, you know what, God, I don't need your salvation, I don't need the eternal life, I don't need the reconciliation you purchased for me at the cost of your own blood, at the cost of your own son, I don't want it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:15-33:22

God says, "Well, then you don't have to have it." And people will choose to go to the Lake of Fire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:23-33:24

It's a place of eternal destruction.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:26-33:31

So John, so this question is, what does it mean that death and Hades were thrown into the Lake of Fire?

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:33-33:39

In the book of Revelation, John saw the end of the world sort of being played out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:41-33:42

    And there's the timer.

    Mark Ort:

    33:43-33:44

    Well, that went fast.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:45-33:50

Okay, so John, when you read Revelation, John sees the end of the world sort of being played out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:52-33:57

Maybe he was transported in time and literally watching it unfold.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:59-34:01

I don't know, but he sees a lot of symbols.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:02-34:08

And John does his best, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit obviously, to describe what he's seeing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:08-34:17

And somehow, somehow he saw death and Hades being thrown into the lake of fire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:17-34:35

So there was some sort of embodiment, some sort of physical representation of death and Hades that John recognized it as being such. What that looked like I have no idea, but John was sure that's what it was, otherwise he wouldn't have said that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:35-35:12

The question is, what does that mean? That's the beautiful thing. It means that there's never again going to be death. Because I've had people ask me, "What if I'm in heaven for like eight trillion years and then I sin or I decide to turn against God?" That is not going to happen, because death and sin and everything that is not of God, not seeking to glorify God, all of that is going to be thrown into the lake of fire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:13-35:19

So death is going to be like eternally history at some point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:20-35:21

It's not going to be an issue.

    35:22-35:22

    Well,

    Mark Ort:

    35:22-35:24

listen, we have two more questions.

    Mark Ort:

    35:25-35:28

The next to the last question, can you answer on the blog?

    Mark Ort:

    35:29-35:31

Yeah, I'll do the next to the last question on the blog.

    Mark Ort:

    35:32-35:37

We have a last question here that we want to get to, and it is this.

    Mark Ort:

    35:38-35:44

Being in high school, I am constantly surrounded by the "do what you think is right" mentality.

    Mark Ort:

    35:45-35:49

That being said, how can I be confident in what the Bible says is right or wrong?

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:50-35:51

That is a really good question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:51-35:56

And the do what you think is right mentality, we thought of the same verse, didn't we?

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:57-36:11

If you read the book of Judges in the Bible, the very last verse, and it's mentioned one other time earlier, but the very last verse in the book of Judges is in those days, there was no king in Israel, and everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:12-36:15

And that's how the Bible described the times of the Judges.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:16-36:24

People were like, "Yeah, I'll just do what I think is right." If you've ever read the book of Judges, it is crazy the things that people were doing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:24-36:33

It was just, and not just like us normal people, like the leaders of Israel were doing crazy things, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:35-36:38

And the question is, who determines what is right and wrong?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:39-36:39

    That's the question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:40-36:43

And the answer, obviously, in this is, oh, you do, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:43-36:45

Do what you think is right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:46-36:48

But there's a big problem with that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:49-36:50

    Have you ever been mistaken?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:51-36:52

    Have you ever been mistaken?

    Mark Ort:

    36:52-36:53

    All the time, man.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:53-36:54

    All the...

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:54-36:54

    Me too.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:55-36:56

    All the time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:56-37:01

So how can I be the ultimate authority on what's right and what's wrong?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:02-37:04

I mean, my family will tell you I make mistakes daily.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:05-37:12

So how am I some kind of a standard on what is morally right or wrong?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:14-37:21

You know, here's a scenario for what if what I think is right is harmful to somebody else?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:22-37:24

Like for example, what if I say, "You know what I think is right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:25-37:28

I think if somebody disagrees with me, I should just smack them in the mouth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:29-37:34

I think that's right." Can you come along and say, "Well, that's not right." Well, I think it's right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:34-37:35

Who are you to tell me that's not right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:36-37:38

    Obviously, I can't do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:38-37:39

Well, why can't I do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:40-37:41

    I think it's right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:41-37:43

Do you see the problem with this mentality now?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:44-37:48

What you think is right might be harmful to someone else or unknowingly harmful to yourself.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:50-37:59

I had a lady tell me one time, "God confirmed with me I think it's okay to smoke." I'm like, "Well, I don't think God told you that." All right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:59-38:00

And look, if you smoke, I'm not condemning you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:00-38:07

I'm just saying that I don't really believe that God sent an angel or somebody to her to smoke him if you got him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:08-38:15

I don't think that, I just, I don't think that, well, I'm not condemning people to smoke.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:15-38:18

I'm just saying, don't tell me that God told you to do it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:19-38:20

    All right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:21-38:24

Morality can only come from an objective source.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:25-38:33

And God's word is that objective source, and God himself is the only ground for morality.

    Mark Ort:

    38:33-38:35

So you're saying that the Bible then is our standard.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:37-38:38

The Bible has to be our standard.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:39-38:54

If the Bible's not our standard, and we become, you know, where morality is subjective, there again we're getting into, well, what I think is right and what you think are right might be totally opposite, we're gonna be at odds with each other, and who determines?

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:54-38:55

    Only God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:57-39:04

And, you know, getting deeper on the subject, there's no such thing as what's good and evil without God's word, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:05-39:06

    God establishes morality.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:07-39:09

So the question is, well, how can I be confident in his word?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:10-39:11

    Well, there's two things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:11-39:15

First of all, objectively, I would say apologetics.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:15-39:16

Study the reliability of the word.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:17-39:23

I know a guy recently, I'm a huge fan of this guy, but he taught an apologetics course right here in this room.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:24-39:30

And get familiar with that material if you're looking at how can I be confident in the word of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:31-39:34

But do you know there's a subjective test for the word of God?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:34-39:38

Turn in your Bibles or jot the reference down, I'll read it for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:38-39:39

    John 7, 17.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:41-39:42

I want you to listen to this very closely.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:42-39:45

This is a subjective test of the word of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:46-40:25

Jesus said, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, "he will know whether the teaching is from God "or whether I am speaking on my own authority." Jesus said, "The person who, I wanna know God, and I wanna live for God, and I wanna incorporate God's word into my life, when that person does that, there's going to be a self-authentication of God's word in their lives." It's very subjective, obviously, but you're gonna know, yeah, this is of God, absolutely.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:25-41:03

But the person that's like, nobody tells me what to do, I don't care what the Bible says, they're never gonna have subjective authentication of God's Word in their life, because they've set their heart against it. Jesus is the guy that's like, "I'm not setting my heart against it. I'm going after it. That guy's gonna know, or that girl is gonna know." So that's a great segue, actually. Next week we are going to be starting a four-part series called Harvest DNA. The question we'll be answering, exploring, is what is the genetic makeup of the church that we are striving to be.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:05-41:07

And hint, they're written on the wall in the back.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:08-41:12

But first up is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:12-41:23

That's what we're going to be talking about next week, so whoever answered that question, come ready to take notes, have your pencil sharpened, all that good stuff, because we're going to be talking about the authority of God's Word next week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:24-41:24

    So.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:25-41:26

    Good.

    Mark Ort:

    41:26-41:27

It was a good morning, Jeff.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:27-41:28

    It was a good morning.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:28-41:32

There was one other question I was really hoping we could answer verbally, but we are out of time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:32-41:38

I will put it on the blog because we're certainly not dodging it, but we certainly want to be sensitive to people's time as well.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:39-41:39

    Well,

    Mark Ort:

    41:39-41:41

there's one other question actually that you cannot dodge.

    Mark Ort:

    41:41-41:43

    I have one more question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:43-41:43

    All right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:43-41:43

    Go ahead.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:43-41:44

    I have

    Mark Ort:

    41:44-41:45

to have Erin come on up here just for a second.

    Mark Ort:

    41:46-41:47

I'm going to put Erin on the spot.

    Mark Ort:

    41:47-41:48

    Oh, man.

    Mark Ort:

    41:49-41:50

It's going to be a long day at the Miller House.

    Mark Ort:

    41:50-41:51

    You can stand up.

    Mark Ort:

    41:52-41:59

we want to know as a congregation if you guys realize and understand how much you're loved and appreciated.

    Mark Ort:

    42:00-42:07

We had a number of people participate in a gift for you guys and we wanted to present it to you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:08-42:09

    Well, thank you very much.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:09-42:11

Is this for 2017 or 2018?

    Mark Ort:

    42:13-42:14

    This is for...

    Mark Ort:

    42:14-42:15

    (audience laughing)

    Mark Ort:

    42:16-42:20

Well, let me ask you guys, should we have them open it now?

    Mark Ort:

    42:21-42:21

    Okay.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end. On the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it, With justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

    Reader 6:

    03:24-03:36

After nearly 400 years of silence, God's promise of the coming Christ was fulfilled in the most spectacular way. A young Jewish virgin named Mary was told she would give birth to the Christ.

    Reader 7:

    03:38-03:41

Matthew chapter one, verses 18 through 23.

    Reader 7:

    03:42-03:45

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

    Reader 7:

    03:45-03:53

When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with Chau, from the Holy Spirit.

    Reader 7:

    03:53-04:00

And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly.

    Reader 7:

    04:01-04:39

But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet. "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which means God with us.

    Reader 8:

    04:41-05:29

Day of Christ's birth came and God in his providence arranged for the Christ to be born in Bethlehem as promised. Luke chapter 2 verses 1 through 7. In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to be registered each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea to the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and lineage of David to be registered with Mary his betrothed who was with child. While they were there the time came for her to give birth and she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn.

    Reader 9:

    05:30-06:00

The Christ was finally here and God chose the most unlikely group on the earth to be the first to receive the news. A group of shepherds. Luke chapter 2 verses 8 through 20 says, "And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them and they were were filled with great fear.

    Reader 9:

    06:01-06:09

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

    Reader 9:

    06:10-06:16

For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

    Reader 9:

    06:16-06:18

And this will be a sign for you.

    Reader 9:

    06:19-06:53

You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased." When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us." And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the a baby lying in a manger.

    Reader 9:

    06:54-06:59

And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.

    Reader 9:

    07:00-07:03

And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.

    Reader 9:

    07:04-07:09

But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.

    Reader 9:

    07:09-07:16

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as it had been told them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:18-07:21

Grab your Bibles and turn with me again Luke 2.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:23-07:32

You know when babies are born, the adults, we are awfully quick to validate ourselves with the attire, aren't we?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:35-07:45

I mean the clothes that we put on the baby, the shirts that say "I love my dad." Who do you think got the baby that shirt?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:47-08:01

"I love my grandma." "Ah, I love my aunt, I love my neighbor, I love my Toyota dealer." Look, that baby doesn't know any of you, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:02-08:07

With the exception of mom and dad kind of as an acquaintance at this point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:09-08:13

But this is a season about a baby.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:15-08:26

Luke 2, picking up in verse 8 again, "In the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:26-08:34

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:36-08:43

The angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will will be for all the people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:44-08:51

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:53-08:57

And this will be a sign for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:57-09:02

You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:04-09:11

As we discussed this morning, the shepherds, they were given an announcement And they were given a sign.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:12-09:19

And verse 12 tells us that that's all wrapped around, pun intended, this baby.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:22-09:24

The angel said this baby's going to be born.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:24-09:28

Well, babies are born everywhere, every day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:29-09:29

    Right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:30-09:35

If you don't believe that, come here on a Sunday morning and just ask permission to poke your head in this room back here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:36-09:38

You're going to see lots of babies are being born.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:40-09:42

So can you be more specific?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:42-09:44

Well there were two things they were to look for.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:44-09:45

Did you see it in verse 12?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:47-09:51

Number one, wrapped in swaddling cloths.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:52-09:53

What kind of a sign is that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:54-09:55

    What is that pointing to?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:57-10:00

Well the swaddling cloths actually point to why Jesus came.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:02-10:06

I just read this about three weeks ago, and it just completely blew my mind.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:06-10:08

    I'd never heard this before.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:11-10:15

But traveling in that day was extremely dangerous.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:16-10:19

And many people did not survive the trip.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:20-10:25

So I'd read that travelers would often take strips of cloth with them on their journey.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:25-11:06

In case one of them died, it was a way of wrapping the body in order to transport it for burial. So more than likely, the cloths that Jesus was wrapped in as a baby were intended to wrap a dead body. That's why this was a sign. It wasn't just a baby wrapped up. We wrap up babies all the time. This baby was to be wrapped up in particular cloths. So cloths for the dead lying in a manger.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:07-11:09

Well that narrows it down a bit, doesn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:10-11:16

I don't imagine in Bethlehem in this day there were too many babies wrapped in burial cloths and laying in a feeding trough.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:16-11:19

But let's talk about that second sign, let's talk about the manger.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:20-11:21

    What is that pointing to?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:23-11:32

I know a barn isn't a great place to spend the night, let alone give birth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:34-11:36

But that manger points to how He came.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:37-11:38

    He came in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:40-11:46

Jesus Christ left His throne in heaven to humble Himself to be among us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:48-11:50

The manger says He has come in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:50-11:52

The clothes point to His mission.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:53-12:01

has come to die, the baby was born to suffer and die for your sins and for my sins.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:01-12:08

So the shepherds, as we saw in this short movie, the shepherds were searching, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:09-12:10

    The shepherds were searching.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:11-12:14

But let's be honest, we've all heard that sermon, haven't we?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:15-12:16

The shepherds were searching for the Messiah.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:17-12:18

    We've heard that sermon.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:18-12:20

We gave that sermon this morning, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:21-12:24

And it's true, the shepherds were searching, the shepherds were searching.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:25-12:26

Everyone's heard a sermon on that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:26-12:35

But so much more, the story of the shepherds, the story of Christmas, is that Jesus is searching for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:37-12:47

You see, on one hand, we, as the humans, sort of identify with the other humans in the story to say, "Yeah, the humans went and searched, but let's take a big step back.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:47-12:54

Who was really searching for who in this story?" God initiated all of this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:56-13:06

The angels appeared, the angels brought the news, they named the place, they gave the sign, the Lord shows up, not because man was looking for Him and couldn't find Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:08-13:10

In fact, the Bible says that man's not looking for God at all.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:12-13:16

The Lord showed up because He was pursuing us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:18-13:20

He was pursuing us with love.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:22-13:24

He was pursuing us with mercy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:25-13:28

He was pursuing us with forgiveness.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:30-13:31

He was pursuing us with grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:33-13:38

You know that baby that was laying in that manger, he grew up to be a man.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:40-13:47

And if you flip over in your Bible a few pages, actually to Luke chapter 19 and verse 10, you'll see something that that man said.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:47-14:01

He said, "I came to seek and to save the lost." So maybe someone here tonight is lost.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:03-14:04

Maybe someone here tonight is saying, "You know what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:05-14:09

I have made a mess of my life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:11-14:12

Jesus must be mad at me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:13-14:16

Jesus must really be disappointed on me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:16-14:23

In fact, I think Jesus, maybe even He turned His back on me because of all the stupid stuff that I've done.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:25-14:26

Well, I got good news for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:27-14:30

The story of Christmas is that Jesus is searching for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:32-14:34

Because the reality is we've all made a mess of our lives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:36-14:39

And the Lord has come to fix that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:40-14:45

So maybe tonight it's time for you to stop running from Jesus and to run to Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:46-14:49

And when you run to Him, you will find forgiveness.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:50-14:51

    You will find love.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:51-14:53

You will find the joy that was promised to these shepherds.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:54-15:01

And when you run to Him, you'll find that He's actually been searching for you the whole time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:03-15:07

So are you looking for a sign from God tonight?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:09-15:10

Right here we have a sign.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:11-15:12

    He's after you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:13-15:18

The manger says that He humbled Himself to be here personally.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:19-15:24

And the swaddling cloths say that He came to die for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:26-15:27

I want you to bow your heads with me please.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:29-15:54

Father in heaven, as we come before You tonight, and as we watch a portrayal of what this may have looked like, I pray, Father, that You would grip our hearts again with the reality that the Messiah has come, Jesus Christ has come, because You love us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:56-16:00

And He has come to save us from our own sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:01-16:05

Father, I pray for the person here tonight who feels like their life is too much of a mess.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:06-16:07

Who feels like they've gone too far.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:08-16:12

I pray for the person here tonight feels like they can't be forgiven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:12-16:19

I pray, Father, that they would see the magnitude of what you've accomplished.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:19-16:29

They would see the awesome reality that it all started with a baby being born and laid in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:30-16:36

God, show the glorious truth that Your grace is greater than any sin that we've committed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:36-16:42

You stand ready to love, ready to forgive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:43-16:45

We thank You for the message, Father.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:47-16:52

The message we celebrate this Christmas season is that You, in fact, are searching for us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:53-16:54

    Thank You, Father.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:56-16:57

We pray these things in Jesus' name.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:58-16:58

    Amen.

  • 00:49-01:08

Open up your Bibles with me please to the gospel according to Luke and we are going to be in chapter 2. Do you know what I think is funny about people? I just think this is weird about people in general. We like to look for things, don't we?

    01:10-01:20

As kids we play hide-and-seek, right? When we were kids we played a game called "Ghost in the Graveyard." You remember playing "Ghost in the Graveyard" up at camp?

    01:20-01:22

And it was like reverse hide and seek.

    01:24-01:26

We like to do word searches.

    01:26-01:29

How many people here, show of hands, let's be honest, how many people like to do word searches?

    01:31-01:32

    Many more than I thought.

    01:33-01:36

People spend money on books to look for words.

    01:36-01:38

I'm like, I didn't lose them, you find them.

    01:38-01:40

    But people love word searches.

    01:41-01:44

How about "Where's Waldo?" Show of hands, how many people know what "Where's Waldo" is?

    01:46-01:52

"Where's Waldo?" Okay, we have some young people looking up here like, who's Waldo?

    01:54-01:57

But we bought these books to find Waldo.

    01:59-02:04

The newest way that we like to look for things, did you see this, they have these apps now.

    02:04-02:05

    Did you see these?

    02:05-02:10

They're apps where you're like a detective or something, and you gotta find the clues in the scene.

    02:10-02:13

You have this little scene, and you gotta find, how many people know what I'm talking about?

    02:14-02:18

Okay, you gotta find like pictures in the scene, like a desk or something.

    02:18-02:20

It's like, you know, find the bunny or whatever.

    02:20-02:21

And he's like in the wood grain.

    02:22-02:29

And I can barely see my phone, let alone seeing these little images of these things on the phone.

    02:30-02:34

I just think it's funny how we love to try to find things until we lose our car keys.

    02:36-02:37

And it's not so fun, is it?

    02:39-02:41

But here's a Christmas version I just learned about.

    02:42-02:43

    Elf on the shelf.

    02:43-02:45

How many people know about Elf on the shelf?

    02:46-02:49

All right, since we're being honest here, how many people here have an elf on the shelf?

    02:52-02:53

    Much less than I thought.

    02:53-02:59

I think some of you need to put your word search books down and go get yourself an elf on the shelf.

    03:00-03:03

We just got ours this year, so it's been an education for me.

    03:04-03:07

Our elf, believe it or not, our elf was named after you, Jay Naur.

    03:08-03:09

    Our elf's name is Jay.

    03:10-03:11

    No, I'm dead serious.

    03:11-03:13

    His name is Jay Peppermint.

    03:16-03:16

    That's a true story.

    03:19-03:27

But as adults, maybe we don't look for the elf at Christmas but we like to play other finding games at Christmas.

    03:27-03:33

We like to play find the decorations, find the right Christmas cards, find that recipe for fruitcake.

    03:34-03:35

    Don't.

    03:37-03:41

Find the perfect present, find the best sale, find the right gift card.

    03:41-03:48

And we get so caught up in looking for all of these things This morning, I want to look at the real question.

    03:50-03:51

    Did you find Jesus?

    03:54-03:54

    Did you find Jesus?

    03:57-04:01

Now look, I'm not trying to be Scrooge, okay?

    04:02-04:04

We have a Christmas tree at our house.

    04:04-04:07

We have an elf at our house named Jay Peppermint, okay?

    04:07-04:11

    I'm not this anti-Christmas, pulpit-pounding, okay?

    04:11-04:12

    I'm not that guy.

    04:12-04:17

I'm just saying, can we step back and let's just be totally objective and honest for a second.

    04:19-04:29

For a holiday about Jesus, most of our time and money are spent on things that have nothing to do with Jesus, true or false.

    04:31-04:33

So the question this morning is, did you find Jesus?

    04:34-04:40

And I want us to find that answer from very familiar characters in God's Word.

    04:40-04:41

So let's look at Luke 2.

    04:43-04:48

It says, "In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.

    04:49-04:53

This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria.

    04:54-05:00

And all want to be registered, each to his own town." Okay, so this was the census.

    05:01-05:15

But instead of sending the person door to door, by the way, I did that part-time, last census, and Lord willing I will never do it again my family is starving to death." But that's how they did their census.

    05:15-05:18

You went back to your hometown to register.

    05:18-05:22

It was completely different than the misery I went through, but they had a different kind of misery, we're going to find out.

    05:23-05:40

It says, "And Joseph went up from Galilee to the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

    05:42-05:46

While they were there, the time came for her to give birth.

    05:47-05:59

Okay, so the census brought them to their hometown to fulfill the prophecy that the Christ, the Messiah, the promised Savior would be born in the city of Bethlehem.

    05:59-06:05

You know, Micah the prophet pronounced that about 700 years prior to these events.

    06:05-06:08

This is the spot where the Messiah is going to be born.

    06:08-06:12

This is the town where the Christ is coming.

    06:12-06:18

So the trip from Nazareth to Bethlehem was about 90 miles.

    06:19-06:20

    So help me out here.

    06:20-06:22

What's about 90 miles from this spot?

    06:23-06:23

    Any ideas?

    06:25-06:25

    Erie?

    06:26-06:26

    Okay.

    06:27-06:38

So imagine ladies being just about due and making a trip up towards Erie.

    06:40-06:50

By the way, not in your car, maybe on the back of a donkey, even though the Bible doesn't say how she traveled, but it wasn't in luxury.

    06:52-06:58

The Mary, pregnant by the Holy Spirit, conceiving within her womb, arrives in time.

    06:59-07:14

And look at verse 7, it says, "And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and lied him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn." Like, what?

    07:16-07:24

So they make this trip and they get into town, and it says, "She laid him in a manger." That's a feeding trough.

    07:24-07:27

That's where they keep the straw for the cattle.

    07:30-07:41

It says, "There was no place for them in the inn." On your outline this morning, we're going to look at what's true about people who find Jesus.

    07:42-07:44

I'm asking you, did you find Jesus?

    07:44-07:51

Well, we're going to see very clearly in this text, there are at least three things that are true about people who find Jesus.

    07:51-07:57

And here's the first one, "They made room for Jesus." They made room for Jesus.

    07:59-08:02

This is another baffling thing we see in God's Word.

    08:03-08:06

It says there was no room for them in the inn.

    08:08-08:10

Now we've all heard of the innkeeper, right?

    08:10-08:19

I remember when I was a kid at the Christmas play in the Methodist church, one year I had the role of the innkeeper.

    08:19-08:25

And my big line was telling Mary and Joseph there was no room for them in the inn.

    08:26-08:29

Like thanks a lot, cast me as the bad guy.

    08:31-08:33

The innkeeper is one of the biggest jerks in the Bible.

    08:35-08:41

Well actually I don't believe that there was an innkeeper at all.

    08:43-09:20

I mean could you imagine, let's seriously, could you imagine this nine month pregnant woman shows up and we have this idea that there's this guy that's like working the front desk at the hotel and this pregnant woman shows up it's like sorry there's really nothing I can do for you ma'am and that's not really what actually happened see but what does the text say the text says they laid him in a manger because there was no place for them in the inn now if you study the In Greek, the word for inn is kataluma.

    09:21-09:22

    Like, well, what's a kataluma?

    09:23-09:30

Well, something that helps is if you find how that word is used in other places in Scripture, and sometimes the context makes it more clear.

    09:30-09:33

Do you know where else in Scripture the word kataluma is used?

    09:33-09:34

    It's used in Mark 14.

    09:37-09:46

If you look up that reference, Jesus told his disciples to prepare for the Passover meal in the Cataluma.

    09:46-09:48

    It was the guest room.

    09:48-09:49

It was an upper guest room.

    09:51-09:55

So they didn't roll into town and show up at the hotel and there wasn't room in the hotel.

    09:56-09:58

Apparently, there was a specific place.

    09:58-10:08

We don't know what, God knows, and if he would have wanted us to know, he would have told us that apparently there was a specific house that had a specific guest room where they were planning on staying.

    10:10-10:16

So they show up and there's no room for them in this guest room.

    10:17-10:22

So the best that people can do, apparently from the text, is put them with the animals.

    10:23-10:26

A lot of times that was the downstairs of the house, the first level.

    10:26-10:36

In a lot of houses, they would have the place where the people lived upstairs, the guest room, the sleeping quarters, and then ground level would be where you keep the animals.

    10:40-10:41

    It was the barn.

    10:41-10:45

Or another way to think of it in our vernacular in our day is it was the garage.

    10:48-10:49

And that's where the Messiah was born.

    10:51-10:53

I shared this story with you before.

    10:53-10:58

I don't remember sharing the story if I told you the punchline though, because it's really the best part.

    10:58-11:09

But several years ago, we did this wedding where Aaron and I, after doing the wedding and going through all that, we show up at the place where the reception was held and we were not on the guest list.

    11:09-11:10

Remember I told you this story?

    11:10-11:11

Did I tell you how this ended?

    11:12-11:17

We were not on the guest list, so we're really embarrassed, and I'm like, oh, this is, hurry up, get out of here.

    11:17-11:18

    And so embarrassing.

    11:19-11:29

So we go, and I take my wife to dinner because she was dressed up looking beautiful, and we were planning on having a nice meal together at this reception, that didn't happen.

    11:30-11:35

So after we went and had dinner, we got back in the car and I realized I had this couple's marriage license still with me.

    11:35-11:41

I'm like, oh, I gotta give that to them because they're gonna go on their honeymoon, they're going to need proof that they were married, and all these things.

    11:41-11:51

And I had to go back into that reception hall to give them their license, and that was humiliating.

    11:52-11:55

But that wasn't the most humiliating thing of that day.

    11:55-12:09

I walked in, and as soon as the groom saw me, as loud as he could in front of everybody, He said, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, hey, are you hungry?

    12:10-12:17

"Because we might have some leftovers back in the kitchen." And I'm like, "Leftovers, really?

    12:18-12:19

    "Leftovers?

    12:20-12:35

"You mean to tell me that for the past several months "I counseled you, I arranged your wedding, "I set things up, I held the rehearsal, "I held the ceremony, I did all the paperwork "for the license, I'm the stinking pastor, "And that's what you're offering me is leftovers?

    12:36-12:40

"Crumbs from your table?" I didn't say that.

    12:42-12:44

But I'm gonna be honest with you, it was pretty humiliating.

    12:46-12:50

And that's the point of the manger because that's what Jesus got.

    12:51-12:52

    Jesus got the leftovers.

    12:53-12:56

Sorry, we can't really offer you our best.

    12:59-13:02

But if you wanna go ahead and give birth to him in the barn, I guess you can do that.

    13:04-13:05

    Really?

    13:06-13:07

    Creator God?

    13:07-13:08

    Awesome God?

    13:08-13:09

    Remember Him?

    13:10-13:12

    Do you remember Exodus God?

    13:12-13:15

Do you remember covenant making and keeping God?

    13:15-13:16

    Do you remember Him?

    13:17-13:18

    He's coming to the earth.

    13:20-13:25

And we make His earthly mother lay Him down in a feeding bin for animals.

    13:28-13:39

Before we feel too sad about that, I think maybe we should examine our own lives and see if that's what Jesus is still getting, leftovers.

    13:41-13:50

You know, in this account there was no room in the inn, no room in the Cataluma, but maybe for you, maybe for you it's no room on my calendar.

    13:51-13:59

Every minute is spoken for with work, hobbies, sports, kids' activities, Netflix, and we We just can't seem to squeeze Jesus into the schedule.

    14:00-14:04

But if we have a couple of minutes, we'll throw up a quick prayer.

    14:05-14:07

Or hopefully church won't go too long and we'll go...

    14:08-14:10

People do that with the offering, right?

    14:11-14:13

You realize everything you have, God gave you.

    14:14-14:17

And when we give back to God, we should give him first and best.

    14:17-14:18

But do you know what a lot of people do?

    14:19-14:19

    What do they give him?

    14:20-14:21

    The leftovers, right?

    14:21-14:22

    The leftovers.

    14:22-14:24

    What do I have left?

    14:26-14:31

So before we feel too bad about no room in the inn, let's take a look at how much room we're giving Jesus.

    14:32-14:34

No room on my calendar, how about no room in my heart?

    14:36-14:38

Your heart only has so much capacity.

    14:41-14:44

And we've sought to satisfy ourselves with lesser things.

    14:45-14:49

And church, we're not hungry for the things of God for the same reason we aren't hungry for health food.

    14:50-14:51

It's because we're full of junk.

    14:52-14:53

    But, but, but, what if?

    14:54-14:54

    What if?

    14:57-15:12

What if whoever in this story, the person that had jurisdiction over the guest room, whatever, whoever that person was, whoever got final say on who stayed in the Cataluma, who stayed in the guest room, what if?

    15:13-15:14

Can you pretend with me for a second?

    15:16-15:23

What if that person knew who was going to be born that night to that woman?

    15:24-15:25

How do you think that story would have changed?

    15:27-15:36

If that person knew the Savior of the world, the King of the universe was about to be born, what do you think would happen?

    15:37-15:38

I'll tell you what would happen.

    15:39-15:45

He would have gone into that guest room and whoever was staying there would have been escorted to the barn.

    15:46-15:55

"I'm sorry, the King of the Universe is here, you're going to have to sleep in the barn tonight." I'm not telling Jesus that He has to stay there.

    15:58-16:08

You see, in the same way, it's only when you recognize who Jesus is, that you'll make room for Him in your life.

    16:10-16:19

You'll bump Him up to VIP priority position, you'll say no to good things, but lesser things in your life, so you can prioritize Him.

    16:22-16:24

You see, I can't give you a sales pitch.

    16:25-16:26

    I can't give you a guilt trip.

    16:27-16:36

You're like, "It's too late for that." Here's the bottom line, it's only when you realize the incomparable worth of Jesus Christ.

    16:38-16:41

As He put it, He's the treasure hidden in the field.

    16:41-16:42

Do you remember that story in Matthew 13?

    16:44-16:46

The guy was digging and he found a treasure worth more than anything.

    16:47-16:49

He sold everything he had just to buy the field to get that treasure.

    16:50-16:51

    That's Jesus.

    16:51-16:54

Jesus said it's like the merchant seeking pearls.

    16:54-16:55

    Do you remember that story?

    16:55-16:57

He found the greatest pearl he'd ever seen.

    16:57-17:00

He sold everything just to buy that one.

    17:02-17:03

    That's Jesus.

    17:05-17:12

And when you recognize Him for who He is, He'll get the priority on the room in your heart.

    17:13-17:15

That's the first thing that's true about people who find Jesus.

    17:16-17:17

    They made room for Jesus.

    17:18-17:20

Secondly, they actively went after Jesus.

    17:21-17:24

    They actively went after Jesus.

    17:25-17:27

Let's pick up in the text, look at verse 8.

    17:28-17:33

It says, "In the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

    17:34-17:44

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.

    17:45-17:48

Underline in your Bible that phrase, glory of the Lord.

    17:50-17:58

Do you realize the glory of the Lord came on the earth in Exodus chapter 40, and left in Ezekiel chapters eight through 10.

    17:59-18:09

So the glory of the Lord hasn't been on the earth centuries and now all of a sudden the glory of the Lord is back on the earth.

    18:11-18:19

It says, "The angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

    18:20-18:27

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord.

    18:28-18:30

And this will be a sign for you.

    18:31-18:35

You will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

    18:36-19:07

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased." When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us and they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.

    19:09-19:19

The thing about this story that's always bothered me is why in the world did God make the announcement to shepherds of all people, right?

    19:21-19:22

    Think about that.

    19:22-19:31

You're God and you're going to come personally in the flesh to the world.

    19:32-19:33

How would you get word out?

    19:33-19:36

I mean, obviously this was before the day of social media.

    19:37-19:39

So God was like, "I'm going to tweet that I'm coming.

    19:40-19:45

You know, #Bethlehem." He could have gone to the high priest, right?

    19:46-19:47

He could have gone to the Sanhedrin.

    19:48-19:50

He could have gone to the Romans.

    19:52-19:54

I mean, those are people that would get the word out.

    19:54-19:55

    Who did he go to?

    19:56-20:02

He went to this ragtag band of dirty shepherds out in the field?

    20:04-20:14

Now, we sort of glorify shepherding in our minds because in our culture, we're sort of detached geographically and time-wise from the Bible.

    20:15-20:18

Because in our minds, hey, you know, the Bible's full of great shepherds, right?

    20:19-20:26

Adam technically was a shepherd, and Abel was a shepherd, and Jacob, and Moses, and David.

    20:26-20:28

David wrote the shepherd's psalms, Psalm 23.

    20:28-20:33

But in Jesus' day, understand, shepherds weren't quite revered the way we revere them.

    20:34-20:36

In Jesus' day, shepherds had no social standing.

    20:37-20:39

    They were considered ignorant.

    20:40-20:42

    They were considered uneducated.

    20:43-20:44

    Here's the biggest problem.

    20:47-20:48

    They were considered irreverent.

    20:50-20:56

because the shepherds by the nature of their work weren't able to keep the Pharisees' rules.

    20:56-20:58

Remember, we talked about this when we went through Mark.

    20:59-21:01

The Pharisees had all these rules about how to keep the Sabbath.

    21:02-21:02

    Remember that?

    21:02-21:05

You're not allowed to do this, you're not allowed to do that, you're not allowed to do this.

    21:05-21:08

And it's crazy the rules that they had.

    21:08-21:15

Well, the shepherds couldn't keep their rules because it's not like, okay sheep, you're on your own for a few hours because we gotta keep the Sabbath.

    21:15-21:18

    They had to work.

    21:20-21:23

    So they were considered unclean.

    21:25-21:26

    They were considered outcasts.

    21:27-21:33

And that is the first reason that God made the announcement to them.

    21:34-21:34

    Jot this reference down.

    21:35-21:36

You can look it up later.

    21:37-21:43

Isaiah 61 verse 1 says the Messiah was coming to bring good news to the poor.

    21:44-21:49

And the prophet gives a description, but the bottom line is this.

    21:49-21:51

His Messiah was promised to come to outcasts.

    21:53-21:59

Jesus, as an adult, who did He hang out with?

    21:59-22:07

Prostitutes, tax collectors, often the most unsavory people, friend of sinners.

    22:09-22:11

And it started even with His birth, didn't it?

    22:12-22:22

The second reason that God made the announcement to the shepherds 1 Corinthians 1:27, we have that verse.

    22:23-22:30

It says, "But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.

    22:30-22:46

God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong." You know, I ask, why didn't God reveal all of this to the high priest, to the Sanhedrin, to the Roman, the high and mighty?

    22:48-22:49

    Because he was shaming them.

    22:50-22:51

You're like, "Well, wait a second.

    22:52-22:54

What do you mean he was shaming them? They didn't even know.

    22:55-22:59

They didn't even know they were being shamed." Well, they were being shamed in God's eyes.

    23:01-23:02

By the way, they never know.

    23:04-23:06

They never know when they're being shamed, even today.

    23:09-23:13

But did you notice, the shepherds weren't told specifically to go.

    23:14-23:25

In our minds, the angels showed up and said, "Hey, I want you to go." They didn't specifically tell them to go, but did they really need to?

    23:27-23:29

The angels just came and gave the announcement, "Hey, by the way, a baby's being born.

    23:30-23:34

Here's the details." The shepherds sort of connected that dot in their mind, didn't they?

    23:34-23:38

"We're going to go find him." That leads me to another question that's always bothered me.

    23:38-23:39

How did they find Mary and Joseph?

    23:41-23:41

    How did they find him?

    23:43-23:47

The Bible doesn't say, I think it's obvious they had to go and knock on a lot of doors, right?

    23:48-23:49

    I mean, could you imagine?

    23:51-23:55

Living in Bethlehem in that day and it's like, any babies being born here?

    23:55-23:57

No, no, no babies born here.

    23:57-24:00

Okay, and they're just like running around trying to find this baby.

    24:00-24:02

Where they show up, any babies being born?

    24:02-24:03

Actually, yeah, we did have a baby.

    24:04-24:04

    Okay.

    24:06-24:09

Is the baby wrapped in swaddling cloths?

    24:11-24:12

    No, actually he's not.

    24:12-24:14

Okay, this isn't the right place.

    24:14-24:16

Is your baby laying in an animal's feeding bowl?

    24:17-24:19

    No, he's in a bed.

    24:19-24:24

Okay, they had to have gone house to house, but that's the point, see?

    24:27-24:32

The shepherds believed the word of God and they acted upon it.

    24:34-24:37

The shepherds demonstrated true biblical faith.

    24:37-24:42

They heard from God and they acted on what they heard.

    24:42-24:45

And that's a transition that many people don't make.

    24:47-24:49

    That's a transition many people don't make.

    24:50-24:57

They hear the message, they hear the Christmas message, "Yep, yep, I believe that message." But they never act on what they know.

    24:58-25:00

    They never personally appropriate it.

    25:02-25:08

And I want to remind you that you have a message from God about Jesus.

    25:09-25:14

And that message from God about Jesus is summed up in the most famous verse in the Bible.

    25:15-25:16

    Right? John 3.16.

    25:17-25:31

It says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life." You have a message from God.

    25:32-25:34

The first part of that message is, listen, God loves you.

    25:36-25:37

    God loves you.

    25:38-25:47

Every week at the end of church we say, "You are loved." Understand that that's not for me.

    25:48-25:55

I do love you, but that's not what I mean when I say, "You are loved." It's a reminder that you have a God in heaven who loves you.

    25:56-26:02

No matter what you've done, no matter where you are, God loves you.

    26:03-26:10

Because God loves you, John 3.16 says, "Because He loves you, God gave you His Son." You know, it is the season of giving, right?

    26:10-26:11

    And why do we give?

    26:13-26:16

Giving is always the natural expression of love, isn't it?

    26:16-26:18

When you love someone, you want to give to them.

    26:18-26:19

    It's just so natural.

    26:20-26:29

And the Bible says that God loved the world so much that He was moved to give His only begotten Son.

    26:31-26:34

The rest of the verse says that whosoever believes in him.

    26:34-26:37

So we talk about belief, let's get back to the shepherds.

    26:39-26:42

    Did the shepherds believe God?

    26:43-26:48

Well, it says in verse 16, "They went with haste." They went with haste.

    26:50-26:58

And for you, seek Jesus with everything that's in you and you'll find eternal life.

    27:00-27:05

But that's something that's true about people who find Jesus as they actively went after Him.

    27:07-27:11

And finally for today, what's true about people who find Jesus?

    27:13-27:14

    They are never the same.

    27:16-27:18

    They are never the same.

    27:20-27:22

This is such a funny story to me.

    27:24-27:31

Could you imagine ladies who have children, could you imagine if you think back to that moment when you delivered that baby?

    27:32-27:36

Could you imagine a group of complete strangers busting into the delivery room?

    27:38-27:59

Like, "Hey, we're here to see the baby." Like, "I'm sorry, who are you?" "Oh, we're shepherds, and an angel told us you was having a baby, so we thought it appropriate to be here for that." Like, "I'm sorry, can you wait in the waiting room?" Like, this is when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.

    28:01-28:10

And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them." They probably had a hard time talking about anything else from that point on, didn't they?

    28:12-28:37

Like, "Hey, you remember that night the angels told us about the baby, you remember that?" Like, "Yeah, we just talked about that." "Yeah, we're gonna talk about it again, 'cause that was awesome." It says, "But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart." And the shepherds returned, back to work, the shepherds returned, back to work but never the same.

    28:37-28:38

Did you see the rest of it?

    28:38-28:51

It says, "Glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen as it had been told them." That's true of every finder of Jesus Christ without exception.

    28:51-29:18

Every single person finds Jesus Christ is never ever ever ever the same. Now these shepherds they didn't become apostles. I don't think they became pastors, but they do get the distinction of being the first New Testament missionaries of Jesus Christ.

    29:19-29:30

And just like seeking Jesus, they didn't need to talk into witnessing about what they saw either, did they?

    29:31-29:40

Jesus' impact on them, this is the crazy thing, even as a baby, Jesus had an impact that changed their lives.

    29:42-29:46

So please look, I love, I love all the Christmas tradition.

    29:46-29:47

    I really do.

    29:50-29:59

But my encouragement for you is to not just make that the thing, because it's so much more than that.

    30:01-30:10

And with the story, I would encourage you to not reduce this story to just sentimentality.

    30:12-30:15

Because honestly, that's what a lot of people want to do with the Christmas story.

    30:16-30:20

They want to make it a lifetime made-for-TV movie, right?

    30:21-30:24

But it's heartwarming stories, some of them.

    30:25-30:42

But it's a heartwarming story of, "Oh, this poor pregnant woman, she had to travel, and there was no room, and she gave birth in the barn, and everything was fine." Roll credits, sad music.

    30:43-30:51

That's sort of what we make the Christmas story, like this young Jewish couple that persevered and overcame the odds.

    30:54-31:02

And I would say, yeah, that's the story, but that's a teeny tiny part of the story because here's the real story.

    31:02-31:06

A baby came into the world who will completely change your life.

    31:08-31:09

    So did you find Jesus?

    31:11-31:18

Because the Bible tells us some things that are true of people who have.

    31:19-31:20

First of all, they made room for Him.

    31:22-31:24

Secondly, they actively went after Him.

    31:25-31:28

And thirdly, by God's grace, they are never the same.

    31:29-31:30

    Let's pray.

    31:31-31:35

Father in heaven, I thank you for this story.

    31:36-31:44

And it can become so familiar that we sort of tune out when we hear it, because we've heard it so many times.

    31:46-31:48

We hear it in church, they even share this story on the TV.

    31:51-32:09

But God, grip us again with the wonder of the humility that you've shown, and the way that you were born, and the humility that you've shown, and reaching out to the outcasts of society to tell them the news.

    32:10-32:25

Father, I pray for us as our schedules are full, and our lives are full with wonderful things, with family stuff, and with traveling, and so many great things happen this time of year.

    32:25-32:33

But Father, I pray that we don't get so caught up in these things that we miss the pearl of great price.

    32:35-32:51

Father, it's my prayer that You would use these things in such a way that we might exalt You, we might tell others about You, like the shepherds, we might glorify Your name at the announcement of this baby.

    32:52-32:54

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

  • 00:35-00:38

Alright, turn in your Bibles to Acts chapter 26.

    00:39-00:41

    Acts chapter 26.

    00:41-00:46

This is actually our last message in the book of Acts until after Easter.

    00:49-01:04

So while you're turning there, just to get us all caught up to speed on where we are in the book of Acts, do you remember the apostle Paul was falsely accused, but still in custody, in Caesarea by the Romans.

    01:04-01:06

He appeals his case to Caesar.

    01:07-01:16

But before he's sent to Rome, King Agrippa and Bernice, his sister/wife, comes to town.

    01:17-01:27

So Festus, the governor, has this big event to figure out how to do the paperwork to send with Paul when he goes to the emperor.

    01:31-01:48

there, Acts 26. Well, before we actually look at the text, you know, we've all heard or read a good review from a satisfied customer and bought something.

    01:50-02:38

We've all heard someone who tried something, recommended it to us, and we've decided to try it ourselves or maybe a doctor say hey you you've got to check out I I've been going to this new chiropractor and you're gonna you're gonna go check him out I think it's called thrive or something like that right it's a good name I agree doctor anyways we've all been there where you hear a good review from a satisfied customer like I gotta go try that and And since we live in the day of online shopping, we also live in the day of online customer reviews, which I think we can all be thankful for because if you're going to invest in something, don't you want to know it's a good product?

    02:39-02:55

I mean, it's one thing for the guy that's selling it to tell you it's good, but even better than the guy that's selling it is the person who tried it and is a satisfied customer, them telling you that it's good.

    02:55-02:58

That's why we love those customer reviews.

    02:59-03:05

That's why this morning, before we get into the text, I wanna look at a few.

    03:05-03:09

These are actual customer reviews from Amazon.

    03:11-03:14

And most of these are going to be movie reviews.

    03:14-03:16

They bought a movie and reviewed it.

    03:16-03:23

But this first one here was actually sent to me from a friend of mine and I'm like, even though it's not a movie, I gotta share it.

    03:23-03:28

This is a review for a commentary on the book of Exodus, saved for God's glory.

    03:28-03:43

And a Kindle customer writes, "Two star review, opening low enough, "I hurt my ankle simply trying to get "my small feet into these." I'm not sure why you're laughing.

    03:44-03:46

    I don't really, I don't think that's funny.

    03:46-03:47

    I had the same problem.

    03:47-03:56

got this book on 1 Corinthians. My foot barely fits in that, and they wouldn't take it back.

    03:59-04:15

Another unsatisfied customer. All right, now these ones are movies. These are customer reviews about movies. The first one is Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. Asa Walker says, One star, the mission was not impossible.

    04:18-04:19

    And that's false advertising.

    04:19-04:22

The movie probably didn't actually have real ghosts in it either.

    04:23-04:33

But here's a review for "The Passion of the Christ." How many of you have seen "The Passion of the Christ?" Okay, Leslie Clark gives it one star.

    04:33-04:39

She says, "I did not know it was in Spanish." All right, science fiction.

    04:40-04:42

How many people have seen Jurassic World?

    04:43-04:45

The sort of reboot of Jurassic Park?

    04:45-04:48

Well, Eric Miles saw it and he was not impressed.

    04:48-04:59

He said, "What happened to the pterodactyl that flew away?" Now look, I'm not goofing on the guy because he misspelled pterodactyl because I have no idea how to spell pterodactyl.

    05:00-05:00

I'd have to look it up.

    05:01-05:03

Here's what I thought was funny about that.

    05:04-05:11

Despite the acting, directing, music score, That ruined his whole movie.

    05:12-05:35

He sat through that whole multi-million dollar production and he went home, or he bought it and watched it at home or whatever, and somebody said, "Hey, Eric, what did you think of Jurassic World?" He goes, "The movie stunk because I don't know what happened to that pterodactyl that flew away." The next movie is Monster Zinc for those Disney Pixar cartoon.

    05:35-05:38

Monsters Inc. Joe Gonzales, not a fan, one star.

    05:38-05:47

He said, "Too many monsters." If you're going to have monsters in the movie, I think you need a title that reflects that.

    05:48-05:52

None of these subliminal, ambiguous titles like Monsters Inc.

    05:53-05:54

    Right?

    05:57-05:58

And our final review for the day.

    05:59-06:00

    This is Titanic.

    06:00-06:03

Mike Watson, he was not a fan, one star.

    06:04-06:05

He said, "This could never happen.

    06:05-06:08

Oh yeah, a boat this big could really sink.

    06:11-06:13

    Well reviews can be helpful.

    06:19-06:27

Unless they come from someone who doesn't understand what they are reviewing.

    06:30-06:35

These people obviously didn't know what they were reviewing.

    06:35-06:38

So you can't really trust their reviews.

    06:41-06:42

Like where are you going with this?

    06:42-06:46

Well, there are a lot of reviews out there about Jesus.

    06:49-06:50

So how do you know who to trust?

    06:52-06:59

Today I'm going to show you, here's one person you can definitely trust regarding his review of Jesus, and his name is Paul.

    07:01-07:06

Because his review of Jesus changed from one star to five stars.

    07:09-07:19

And like all of these reviewers from Amazon, at first he was looking at Jesus all wrong.

    07:22-07:26

Even when he really experienced Jesus for who He is, everything changed for Paul.

    07:30-07:37

The best witnesses for Christ are the ones who are motivated to witness because of real life change.

    07:37-07:46

In other words, the best witnesses for Christ - pardon the secular term, but you understand what I mean - the best witnesses for Christ are satisfied customers.

    07:48-07:54

I found Jesus Christ to be everything that He promised and more.

    07:57-08:06

So Acts chapter 26, Paul, he's not technically in court, but he's defending himself again.

    08:07-08:12

And we're going to see here that his goal was to witness to Agrippa, the king.

    08:13-08:17

So Paul was the satisfied customer that had audience with the king.

    08:18-08:18

    Could you imagine?

    08:21-08:28

Paul has one shot to sell him on a serious look at Jesus Christ.

    08:31-08:33

We are going to read the entire chapter.

    08:35-08:43

I heard some people gasp and a couple of groans, "We're going to get through this together." But the reason we're doing this is it all goes together, right?

    08:44-08:49

So let's look at Acts chapter 26.

    08:51-09:08

So Agrippa said to Paul, and remember the scene, they have this big prom, this big event, you know, pomp and circumstance and all of that to write up the paperwork, and Festus sort of makes his opening comments, chapter 26.

    09:09-09:16

So Agrippa says to Paul, "You have permission to speak for yourself." And Paul stretched out his hand and made his defense.

    09:17-09:31

"I consider myself fortunate that it is before you, King Agrippa, I'm going to make my defense today against all the accusations of the Jews, especially because you are familiar with all the customs and controversies of the Jews.

    09:33-09:37

Therefore I beg you to listen to me patiently." He wasn't flattering him, okay?

    09:37-09:38

    Paul wasn't buttering him up.

    09:39-10:04

Paul was just like, "Look, I've been dealing with the Romans," and sort of read between the lines here, "Festus was kind of clueless." Remember he was like, "I don't know what to do with this guy, Agrippa, can you help the brother out?" And Paul's like, "I'm glad somebody who knows what's going on, I'm going to be able to tell you my story." My manner of life for my youth spent from the beginning among my own nation and in Jerusalem is known by all the Jews.

    10:06-10:14

They've known for a long time, if they're willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion, I have lived as a Pharisee.

    10:16-10:27

And now I stand here on trial because of my hope and the promise made by God to our fathers, to which our 12 tribes hope to attain as they earnestly worship night and day.

    10:27-10:32

And for this hope, I am accused by Jews, O King.

    10:33-10:39

Why is it thought incredible by any of you that God raises the dead?" I love that question.

    10:39-10:40

    Paul's like, "Here's the issue.

    10:41-10:43

I'm talking about Jesus resurrecting from the dead.

    10:43-10:52

As soon as I say resurrection, everybody just throws a fit." Paul's like, "Why is this so crazy to you that God raises the dead?

    10:53-11:08

How do you not get that as devout Jews?" He said, "I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposition to the name of Jesus of Nazareth, and I did so in Jerusalem.

    11:08-11:17

I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them.

    11:18-11:24

And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme.

    11:26-11:31

and raging fury against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

    11:33-11:40

And this connection, I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priest.

    11:41-11:52

At midday, O King, I saw on the way a light from heaven brighter than the sun that shone around me and those who journeyed with me.

    11:54-12:04

when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?

    12:05-12:56

It is hard for you to kick against the goads." And I said, "Who are you, Lord?" And the Lord said, "I am Jesus whom you are persecuting, but rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles, whom I am sending you to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.

    12:58-13:16

Therefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with repentance.

    13:18-13:22

For this reason, the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me.

    13:24-13:28

To this day, I have had the help that comes from God.

    13:29-13:50

And so I stand here testifying, both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass, that the Christ must suffer, and that by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles." There again he circled back to that Jewish mindset.

    13:50-13:57

He goes, "Look, anything I've ever said has been promised in the Scriptures, in the law.

    13:57-13:58

    It's all written there.

    13:59-14:07

And the people that say they believe what's written in the law are persecuting me because I preach that Jesus fulfilled what is written," where?

    14:08-14:08

    In the law.

    14:10-14:18

And as he was saying these things in his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, "Paul, you are out of your mind.

    14:20-15:08

Your great learning is driving you out of your mind." But Paul said, "I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking true and rational words, for the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly, for I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has not been done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe. I love that question. It's snake-like. Remember we talked about the snake and the dove? This was snake-like. So Paul here, you get the whole scene in your mind, the big pageantry and the big shows going on here and Paul's like, "Do you believe the prophets?" Because I know that you do.

    15:09-15:18

Because see, if Agrippus says, "Well, yeah, I believe the prophets," now all of a sudden it looks like he's agreeing with Paul.

    15:19-15:21

And that was going to make the Jewish leaders angry.

    15:21-15:30

"Oh, wait a second, the king's on Paul's side." So he couldn't say that, but he couldn't say, "No, I don't believe in the prophets.

    15:31-15:32

You're the king of the Jews.

    15:32-15:37

You can't exactly get up and say, "I don't believe the Jewish prophets." So what did he say?

    15:38-15:42

Notice how he kind of dances around the issue.

    15:42-15:43

    Good politician here, right?

    15:44-15:47

No offense to any politicians listening to this.

    15:48-16:34

And Agrippa said to Paul, "In a short time, would you persuade me to be a Christian?" And Paul said, "Whether short or long, I would to God that not only you, but also to all who hear me this day might become such as I am, except for these chains." Then the king rose and the governor and Bernice and those who were sitting with them, and when they had withdrawn, they said to one another, "This man is doing nothing to deserve death or imprisonment." And Agrippa said to Festus, "This man could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar." Now that last statement, it wasn't exactly a law.

    16:36-16:50

It was more of an unwritten law in those days that if someone appealed to Caesar, stopping that process could be detrimental to your political career.

    16:52-16:54

So that's what Agrippa was getting at.

    16:55-17:17

He goes, "You know, we could have let him go, but we certainly can't do it now that he appealed to Caesar." So, on your outline today, like Paul, to sum up his experience as a satisfied customer, I would say that I too give Jesus a five-star review.

    17:20-17:28

Like Paul, I would want to sell you based on my experience with Jesus Christ.

    17:29-17:32

So we're just going to pull a few of these principles out of this passage.

    17:33-17:38

But on your outline, here is what I have found compelling about Jesus.

    17:41-17:46

We see from the passage that Paul was trying to persuade Agrippa to come to Christ.

    17:46-17:48

Not just Agrippa, but everyone who heard.

    17:51-17:55

And again, carrying the analogy, this was a sales pitch for Jesus.

    17:56-18:00

And Paul was saying, "Here's why. Here's why I'm convinced.

    18:01-18:07

That following Christ is the way." I would echo these sentiments today.

    18:11-18:14

And if I may, I'd like to use this as my own sales pitch.

    18:14-18:21

If you're listening to this, and you don't know Jesus Christ, you think, "Why should I be a follower of Christ?

    18:22-18:23

Why should I be a Christian?

    18:23-18:30

Why should I get serious about this?" I would say, "Well, here's what I found compelling about Jesus, just like Paul.

    18:33-18:35

    Number one, He pursues you.

    18:37-18:38

    He pursues you.

    18:43-18:45

That is something so awesome about Jesus.

    18:47-18:49

You see, we've rebelled against Him in our sin.

    18:51-19:00

And He would have every right to literally say, "To hell with you." But what does He do instead?

    19:02-19:03

    He pursues us.

    19:05-19:11

And Paul knew that he came to Christ because Christ was after Paul.

    19:11-19:12

    Right?

    19:13-19:23

We didn't see Paul on his face saying, "Jesus, I just want to know who you are." We see Paul on the way to arrest, imprison, kill Christians when Jesus intervenes.

    19:26-19:28

You know, that's how the Bible portrays God.

    19:31-19:33

He's the shepherd looking for a lost sheep.

    19:35-19:39

He's a father running to a lost son.

    19:42-19:48

And I would say like Paul, I was at my worst when God chased me down.

    19:50-19:55

But to me, that's one of the most compelling things about the Lord is the fact that He's after you.

    19:57-20:08

He's not like, "I'm hidden, try to find me, see if you can figure it out." If Christmas teaches us anything, it teaches us that God is after us.

    20:10-20:12

That's what I find compelling about Jesus.

    20:12-20:15

Number two, He will totally forgive you.

    20:17-20:19

    He will totally forgive you.

    20:22-20:26

You know, we've seen a few times here in the book of Acts that Paul has shared his testimony.

    20:29-20:33

Do you ever think that that must have grieved Paul to recount that past life?

    20:35-20:39

How many times do you think when Paul was sharing his testimony he could see Stephen's face in his head?

    20:40-20:40

    Remember Stephen?

    20:41-20:54

Paul's like, "Here, let me hold your coats so you can pelt him with rocks until he's dead." I helped kill that kid.

    20:58-21:08

He was the religious nut. He imprisoned Christians, he killed Christians, and the reality is look we all have a past. We've all done things we're not proud of, right?

    21:10-21:18

Let's have open mic day. Everybody come up, step into the microphone, and list the things that you've done that you're not proud of?

    21:20-21:21

    You're like, now?

    21:21-21:23

    Yeah, now, let's line up.

    21:25-21:25

    Are you serious?

    21:25-21:26

    No, I'm not serious.

    21:27-21:28

    But could you imagine?

    21:29-21:30

    Could you imagine?

    21:30-21:31

How would you feel about that?

    21:32-21:34

How would you feel if I said, okay, you're up.

    21:35-21:37

Tell me all the things you've done in your past that you're ashamed of.

    21:39-21:47

And understand here, Paul, basically he's standing in the middle of Congress doing that very thing.

    21:48-21:49

He goes, "Look, here's what I've done.

    21:52-22:00

"I've done some horrible things." But you see, the reality is it doesn't matter what you've done.

    22:01-22:07

Jesus Christ is ready to totally forgive you if you turn to Him.

    22:10-22:12

I find that so compelling about Jesus.

    22:14-22:16

    He offers total forgiveness.

    22:17-22:21

As far as the East is from the West, He removes our iniquity from us.

    22:21-22:24

He casts our sins into the depths of the sea.

    22:24-22:33

Jesus promises, and this is really important because He puts it in both Testaments, to Jeremiah and Hebrews, I will remember their sins no more.

    22:33-22:36

He is willing to completely forget your sin.

    22:39-22:40

You know, we're talking about no fear this year.

    22:40-22:41

    I will not fear.

    22:42-22:48

And someday, someday you are going to die and you are going to stand before God.

    22:51-22:56

And there is, Romans 8.1, now therefore, what?

    22:57-23:00

No condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

    23:01-23:06

You have nothing to fear regarding judgment from God when you're in Christ.

    23:07-23:09

Like, well, how do I get this?

    23:09-23:11

I want you to look back at verse 18.

    23:14-23:21

He says that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.

    23:24-23:26

I find this totally compelling about Jesus.

    23:28-23:31

It's the salvation He offers isn't based on what I do.

    23:34-23:35

It's based on what He's done.

    23:38-23:40

Notice he talks about sanctification here.

    23:40-23:43

My salvation isn't sustained by my works either.

    23:45-23:45

    Right?

    23:45-23:51

Some people are like, well, you're saved by grace, but then you sort of stay afloat by your good works.

    23:51-23:51

    No.

    23:53-23:54

    Hey, good works are important.

    23:54-23:56

We're going to be talking about that.

    23:56-24:02

But, your good works don't give you any merit towards Jesus Christ.

    24:04-24:13

Understand that Jesus Christ loves you the same on your absolute best day as He does on your absolute worst day.

    24:14-24:27

The day that you're neck deep in sin and the day that you spent 18 hours of the day sitting in church, He loves you the same because it's based on what He's done for you.

    24:28-24:30

It's not based on what you can do for Him.

    24:31-24:32

    By faith.

    24:33-24:34

    I find that totally compelling.

    24:38-24:44

Number three, like Paul, what I find compelling about Christ is He wants to use you.

    24:45-24:46

    He wants to use you.

    24:47-24:50

And like Paul, God is going to use you as two things.

    24:51-24:53

Look at it again in verse 16.

    24:54-25:04

He says, "I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness." It's really what God calls all of His people to.

    25:04-25:05

We're to be servants and witnesses.

    25:07-25:12

And when you know Christ, you know there's no greater joy than serving Him.

    25:16-25:17

I find that compelling about Jesus.

    25:19-25:25

That God wants to use regular old people like us to preach the Gospel.

    25:27-25:32

God wants to use regular people like us to love people.

    25:33-25:35

God wants to love the world through you.

    25:36-25:38

And I find that so compelling about Jesus.

    25:41-25:46

Number four, what I find compelling about Jesus is this, He changes your life.

    25:48-25:49

    He changes your life.

    25:52-26:00

Paul talked in verse 20 about preaching that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with repentance.

    26:02-26:09

If you think following Christ is about rules, then you're just like the guy who was reviewing the Titanic movie.

    26:10-26:13

You completely missed everything that was happening.

    26:14-26:24

You're like, "Okay, so if following Christ isn't about keeping the rules and doing the actions, then why does the Bible say to repent?" I'll tell you why.

    26:26-26:30

Repentance is your acknowledgment that your thing ain't working.

    26:31-26:35

That's the person who knows that he needs what God offers.

    26:36-26:44

My sin, my selfishness, living for myself, my way, it's done nothing but make myself a mess.

    26:45-26:47

And repentance is changing your mind.

    26:48-26:51

And when your mind changes, your actions change.

    26:51-26:54

And when your actions change, Your life changes.

    26:57-27:06

So when we talk about obedience, when the Bible talks about obedience, understand obedience to Christ is not about keeping the rules to make God happy.

    27:07-27:11

God is quote unquote happy with you on the basis of what Jesus has done.

    27:12-27:16

God's not happy with you or unhappy with you based on your conduct.

    27:17-27:18

Like so what place is obedience?

    27:19-27:21

I want you to jot these four things down.

    27:21-27:22

    What is obedience about?

    27:23-27:25

Why do we say, "Obey the Lord, obey the Lord"?

    27:25-27:26

    Why do we say that?

    27:26-27:28

    It's not a salvation issue.

    27:29-27:30

What kind of issue is it?

    27:30-27:31

    It's four things.

    27:31-27:32

    Write these down.

    27:32-27:33

    First of all, authority.

    27:35-27:37

    Obedience is acknowledging God's authority.

    27:38-27:42

Obedience is our way of saying, "He is God and I am not.

    27:43-27:47

He is God and I am not." Acts 5.29.

    27:49-28:01

is saying, "I'm just a part of creation and you're the almighty, holy, wise God, so yeah, I should bow to your authority." Obedience secondly is about, write this down, trust.

    28:02-28:03

    It's about trust.

    28:05-28:06

    Hebrews 11.8.

    28:08-28:11

What you're saying is, "I don't understand God, but I'm going to do it your way.

    28:12-28:18

Here's how I want to handle this situation, but your word says I should handle the situation in a different way.

    28:18-28:24

So I'm gonna tell you what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna do it your way, and I'm gonna trust your results.

    28:25-28:29

We talk about that with money, right? Financial Peace University, right? It's getting... that's repentance.

    28:30-28:36

Here's how I thought about handling money. Here's how God says, and maybe I don't understand it, but I'm going to trust it.

    28:38-28:42

And when I trust, that's obedience.

    28:45-28:47

Third reason for obedience is love.

    28:49-28:49

    There's love.

    28:49-28:50

    John 14, 15.

    28:51-28:55

Jesus said, "If you love me, you'll keep my commandments." It's that simple.

    28:55-28:56

How can you show Jesus that you love Him?

    28:58-29:00

    Send Him a Christmas/birthday card?

    29:03-29:05

Because we celebrate His birthday on Christmas.

    29:07-29:07

    Too late.

    29:07-29:08

    Don't laugh now.

    29:09-29:11

How can you show Jesus you love Him?

    29:12-29:12

    Give Him a hug?

    29:12-29:13

    Not yet.

    29:14-29:15

    How?

    29:16-29:19

Jesus said we show our love by obeying His commandments.

    29:22-29:26

And then fourthly, this kind of ties to the trust thing, but just write down benefit.

    29:28-29:33

Deuteronomy 6.24, interesting statement God makes often through the law.

    29:33-29:36

He says we should obey God for our own good.

    29:37-29:37

    It's for our own good.

    29:39-29:40

    Try it your way.

    29:41-29:44

Keep a journal, make notes, let me know how that works out.

    29:44-29:48

do everything your way, and then try to do everything God's way.

    29:49-29:51

Keep a journal, make notes, tell me how that works out.

    29:51-29:57

And you're going to find 100 times out of 100, doing it God's way always gets the better result for you.

    29:58-29:58

    For you.

    30:01-30:02

    It'll change your life.

    30:05-30:06

I find that compelling about Jesus.

    30:07-30:09

Jesus isn't like, hey, you know what I'm about?

    30:09-30:18

Come to church for an hour to an hour and a half on Sunday and sing some songs and listen to, try to stay awake to your message or whatever, and see you next week.

    30:19-30:23

He changes your life from the inside out.

    30:26-30:31

And finally, number five, what I find so compelling about Jesus is He will always be with you.

    30:33-30:34

He will always be with you.

    30:35-30:36

Do you notice that from Paul?

    30:37-30:44

Verse 22, he says, "To this day, "I've had the help that comes from God." He will always be with you.

    30:47-30:53

Several years ago when I used to have to travel out of town, I would have to take my dog to this kennel.

    30:54-31:04

And this kennel was run by these people that had a house at the top of the hill, but the actual building where they kenneled the dogs was at the bottom of an extremely steep hill.

    31:07-31:24

And the one time I went to pick up my dog, It was in January and it had just like snowed/freezing rain and this hill was a solid sheet of white ice.

    31:25-31:31

And I remember walking down to the kennel and literally slipping and falling a few times on my way down to get the dog.

    31:32-31:34

And when I finally made it, it was a long hill.

    31:34-31:38

It was like, in my mind, it was like a mile long.

    31:38-31:40

It wasn't that long, like literally I didn't measure it.

    31:41-31:43

But in my mind, it was like a really long, steep hill.

    31:43-31:45

And especially when you're falling a lot, it seems longer.

    31:46-31:47

So I finally make it down to the kennel.

    31:49-31:53

And the lady that ran the business was sitting down there in her wheelchair.

    31:56-31:59

Did you think of the same question that I had?

    31:59-32:03

I'm like, how did you get down here?

    32:05-32:06

    I didn't ask that though.

    32:07-32:09

I had an even bigger question.

    32:09-32:10

    Go ahead, what is it?

    32:12-32:13

How are you gonna get back up?

    32:14-32:17

I said, what are you doing down here?

    32:17-32:20

She's like, well, I can't remember the whole story.

    32:20-32:23

Somehow she got down there and wasn't able to get back up.

    32:23-32:27

And she said, you know, I said, what are you gonna do?

    32:27-32:32

And she said, well, my son-in-law, he's gonna be coming and he'll help me get back up.

    32:32-32:33

I'm like, when's he gonna come?

    32:33-32:35

She said, oh, he'll be here after supper.

    32:36-32:39

I'm like, after supper is like seven hours from now.

    32:40-32:45

Is that your plan to sit down here in the blizzard in your wheelchair and your house coat for seven hours?

    32:45-32:46

    Like, is that your plan?

    32:46-32:48

She's like, I don't know what else to do.

    32:48-32:50

I said, I'll take you up.

    32:52-32:54

    She goes, all right.

    32:55-32:57

So get this picture in your head.

    32:58-33:11

I'm pulling this woman in her wheelchair up this steep hill in the snow backwards, slipping and sliding the whole way, 'cause it was so,

    33:11-33:11

    (mimics sliding)

    33:12-33:23

and in my mind, I'm just thinking, "God, please do not let me lose grip or lose my footing," because she literally would have died if I would have fallen and she would have gone down in her wheelchair.

    33:23-33:26

And I'm pulling her up, pulling her up, pulling her up.

    33:26-33:31

Every muscle in my body just like on alert, right?

    33:31-33:31

    don't slip.

    33:34-33:41

And the whole time I was pulling her up the hill, the whole time I'm pulling her up the hill, she was berating me.

    33:43-33:48

She was saying, if my son-in-law were here, he would have had me up by now.

    33:48-33:50

My son-in-law is a big, strong guy.

    33:50-33:52

You should see the size of my son-in-law.

    33:52-33:53

    He's got some big arms.

    33:53-33:55

He would have had me up there by now.

    33:55-33:56

    And I'm pulling her up.

    33:56-34:01

And she's like, yeah, if he was here, If he was here, he wouldn't be struggling like you are.

    34:01-34:05

And I'm like, "Ugh!" No, I didn't do that.

    34:05-34:08

    I didn't do that, Mike.

    34:10-34:12

The whole way up, I'm pulling her up.

    34:12-34:35

And the whole, she's, "Yeah, oh, I just wish he was here "because, well, he wouldn't be struggling like you are." And then finally, I said to the woman, "You know, there's a big difference "between me and your son-in-law." And she's like, "What's that?" And I said, "He ain't here." Here's the point.

    34:38-34:42

Power means nothing if it isn't present.

    34:45-34:50

And God, the possessor of all power, promises to always be present.

    34:52-34:54

I find that so compelling about Jesus.

    34:57-35:00

You don't have to sit and wait for Him to show up after supper maybe sometime.

    35:02-35:04

    He's there all the time.

    35:06-35:18

So, like Paul and his chains, there are some things in my life that I wouldn't wish upon you.

    35:20-35:33

But like Paul, I would wish for you to discover what I have - Who pursued me when I was at my worst, and forgave me of all my sin.

    35:33-35:35

Who accepted me just as I was.

    35:37-35:42

Who totally changed my life, and He's with me forever, and He will do the same for you.

    35:44-35:46

So take it from a satisfied customer.

    35:48-35:49

    I give Jesus five stars.

    35:51-35:51

    Let's pray.

    35:52-35:59

Father in heaven, we thank you so much for the faithful testimony that you've preserved in your Word.

    36:02-36:10

What a testimony of a man who didn't understand Jesus and hated Him, and then when he met Him, he gave his life for Him.

    36:12-36:18

He spent his life pursued preaching and planting churches and enduring much.

    36:21-36:28

So Father, I pray that we would sort of reevaluate in our own lives what place Christ has.

    36:31-36:46

Not as duty or obligation, Father, but I pray that we would get back to the place where we are drawn to Christ because of what was so compelling about Christ that moment we first believed.

    36:49-37:10

Father, I pray especially for anyone here, either in this room or going to be listening to this online, I pray that if there's someone who hasn't received Christ, that yes, certainly Jesus calls us to count the cost, but we also must count the cost of not following Christ.

    37:10-37:26

But I pray, Father, that they would come to know this loving God who pursues us, this loving God who forgives us and who changes us, this loving God who is with us every step of every moment of every day.

    37:28-37:32

To your glory and honor, Father, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  • 00:35-00:38

Grab your Bibles and open them up to the book of Acts chapter 25.

    00:40-00:41

    Acts chapter 25.

    00:44-00:51

While you're turning there, just to get us all caught up to speed, we're going verse by verse, chunk by chunk through the book of Acts.

    00:53-00:54

Where are we in Acts chapter 25?

    00:55-00:58

Well Paul is in custody in Caesarea.

    00:58-01:03

He was falsely accused of bringing Greeks into the temple in Jerusalem.

    01:05-01:11

While the Roman governor Felix just stalled for two years and then he got replaced.

    01:12-01:14

Didn't do anything with Paul, still in custody.

    01:15-01:21

The new guy Festus, we saw was proactive, but he didn't know what to do because Paul was innocent.

    01:23-01:26

But releasing Paul would have angered the Jewish leaders.

    01:28-01:30

So Paul, we saw last week, he appealed to Caesar.

    01:31-01:38

That was his right as a Roman citizen, saying, "I'm going to take this to the highest court." So Festus was like, "Great.

    01:39-01:43

I'll pack your bags." And that's where we are.

    01:44-01:48

Acts 25, picking up in verse 13.

    01:50-01:58

It says, "Now when some days had passed, Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus.

    02:01-02:18

And as they stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul's case before the king, saying, "There's a man left prisoner by Felix, and when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid their case against him, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him.

    02:19-02:32

I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up anyone, before the the accused met the accusers face to face and had opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge laid against him.

    02:34-02:37

So when they came together here, I made no delay.

    02:37-02:43

But on the next day, took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought.

    02:45-02:51

When the accuser stood up, they brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed.

    02:52-03:04

Rather, they had certain points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus who was dead, but whom Paul asserted to be alive.

    03:06-03:16

Being at a loss how to investigate these questions, I asked whether he wanted to go to Jerusalem and be tried there regarding them.

    03:16-03:26

But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of the emperor, I ordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.

    03:29-03:42

Then Agrippa said to Festus, 'I would like to hear the man myself.' 'Tomorrow,' said he, 'you will hear him.'" All right, Agrippa is introduced.

    03:42-03:43

    Who is Agrippa?

    03:43-03:59

He was actually the king who ruled the northern part of Palestine, and even though he wasn't over Judea, that wasn't his jurisdiction, he controlled the temple treasury and he appointed the high priest.

    04:00-04:08

You're like, "Why are you telling us this?" Because he had a stake in Jewish affairs, and Agrippa was considered an expert in Jewish things.

    04:09-04:10

    That sets the stage.

    04:10-04:18

So Agrippa comes to town and Festus is like, "Great, I have a Jewish problem and you're an expert in Jewish things.

    04:18-04:29

So I need you to give me a Jewish solution here because I have no idea what to do." All right, so if you're a fan of family trees and lineage and tracing all this, get ready.

    04:31-04:35

Agrippa's father was Herod from Acts 12.

    04:37-04:37

    You remember him?

    04:38-04:41

He's the one who killed James, imprisoned Peter.

    04:41-04:44

He dressed like a disco ball, was eaten by worms and he died.

    04:45-04:51

And interestingly, it happened in the same city that these events are taking place, Caesarea.

    04:52-04:59

Now, the previous governor that Paul had trial under, Felix, remember he had a wife, Drusilla.

    05:01-05:04

You're like, wait a minute, I was here for that sermon.

    05:04-05:07

Drusilla was also a disco balls kid too, right?

    05:07-05:15

Yes, so Agrippa and Drusilla would be brother and sister, right?

    05:16-05:23

But did you know Disco Ball had another kid and a daughter and her name was Bernice.

    05:25-05:27

And you're like, wait a minute, Agrippa's Bernice.

    05:28-05:30

    Yeah, same one.

    05:31-05:40

You're like, so you're telling me that Bernice was his Wife and his sister?

    05:40-05:42

    Yeah, yeah.

    05:42-05:43

    Everybody say ooh.

    05:44-05:46

    Okay, yeah.

    05:49-05:52

Scandalous to say the least, but yeah, wife and sister.

    05:52-05:52

    And you know what?

    05:52-05:54

I don't even have time to get into it all this morning.

    05:55-05:57

Do a little biographical study of Bernice.

    05:57-06:02

That woman was married her uncle and previously and everything else.

    06:02-06:03

    I mean, she was, wow.

    06:04-06:07

So yeah, she was married to her brother at this point in history.

    06:09-06:15

Agrippa's great uncle was the one who killed John the Baptist, the one who put Jesus on trial.

    06:17-06:20

And for a little Christmas flair for you, here we go.

    06:20-06:24

Agrippa's great grandfather was Herod the Great.

    06:25-06:30

And that was the one who ordered all the babies to be killed trying to catch Jesus when Jesus was born.

    06:31-06:32

Okay, so that's the family tree.

    06:32-06:33

    You got all that?

    06:34-06:35

You're like, "Yeah, I got the family treatment.

    06:35-06:39

It doesn't branch off a lot when it comes to Bernice." Yeah, I know, I know.

    06:40-06:42

    That's just how it goes.

    06:43-06:46

So Agrippa came to pay respects to Festus.

    06:46-06:47

    It was a political thing.

    06:48-06:50

Again, Festus was like, "Okay, I got a problem.

    06:50-06:57

This guy broke the Roman laws and the Jews hate him to death over some religious dispute, over some guy named Jesus.

    06:58-07:00

    And he appealed to Caesar.

    07:01-07:02

And I am so glad you're in town.

    07:03-07:05

can you please help us Agrippa?

    07:06-07:08

And Agrippa says, I can help you, absolutely.

    07:09-07:10

But first let's have a prom.

    07:11-07:13

And that's what we see in the next passage here.

    07:13-07:15

    Look at verse 23.

    07:17-07:21

So in the next day, Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp.

    07:23-07:25

The Greek word for pomp is fantasia.

    07:26-07:27

    Thought that was interesting.

    07:28-07:35

They entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city.

    07:36-07:38

So can you get the picture in your mind?

    07:38-07:43

It's like a giant, just pageantry, just this big show.

    07:44-07:50

And here comes the king with the whole escort, the entourage, and do you have that picture in your head?

    07:51-08:10

Okay, then it says, "Then at the command of Festus, "Paul was brought in." The Festus said, "King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man about whom the whole Jewish people petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he ought not to live any longer.

    08:11-08:15

But I found that he had done nothing deserving death.

    08:16-08:23

And as he himself appealed to the emperor, I decided to go ahead and send him." Watch this.

    08:23-08:24

    Don't miss this.

    08:24-08:29

"But I have nothing definite to write to my Lord about him.

    08:30-08:41

Therefore, I have brought him here before you all and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after we have examined him, I may have something to write.

    08:42-08:55

For it seems to me unreasonable in sending a prisoner not to indicate the charges against him." Okay, so did you see why they had this giant party?

    08:56-08:56

    Did you see it?

    08:56-08:57

It's right there in the text.

    08:58-09:10

They had a giant party slash, it wasn't really a trial, you're gonna see that, but they had this big to-do over filling out the paperwork, right?

    09:11-09:12

Is that what your Bible says?

    09:12-09:20

They have this big, let's get everybody here because Festus is like, yeah, I gotta fill out the form here and I'm not quite sure where it goes in the blanks.

    09:20-09:26

Can you please help me fill this out?" And that's why they had this big prom.

    09:28-09:57

You know, when we get to this part of Acts, it gets a little frustrating, because at least to me reading it, when you kind of insert yourself in the story, because how many times did the law, did the Romans say, "Paul isn't guilty." We have seen it over and over and over in Jerusalem before Claudius Lysias and before Felix and before Festus and over and over, even in this passage today, "He's not guilty.

    09:57-10:03

I find nothing wrong that he had done." How many times do we have to hear that?

    10:04-10:05

How many times do we have to see that?

    10:07-10:08

Today we're going to talk about injustice.

    10:10-10:12

So let's define the term, first of all.

    10:13-10:18

The simplest definition of justice is conforming to lawfulness.

    10:19-10:20

    Conforming to lawfulness.

    10:21-10:27

Injustice is when what is lawful is not done.

    10:29-10:32

I need to take a couple of minutes to clarify something.

    10:33-10:37

I know we like to joke around and have fun and stuff a lot, but this is serious.

    10:39-10:40

Because this is a very hard truth.

    10:42-10:44

And I need you to listen to every word I say here.

    10:45-10:46

Because I don't want to be misunderstood.

    10:49-11:08

We often, myself included/especially, we often say or think, "That's not fair." the subject at hand has nothing to do with fairness or justice.

    11:12-11:24

Injustice is an objective fact thing, meaning what's not fair according to the laws and the rules that are established for everybody.

    11:26-11:32

That is different, please hear me, that is different than what we sometimes wrongly think.

    11:34-11:45

When we say that's not fair, when the truth is that's not an objective fact thing, that's a subjective opinion thing.

    11:46-11:51

And that has nothing to do with true fairness and injustice.

    11:52-11:53

    Is everybody with me?

    11:54-11:55

I'm gonna give you an example.

    11:56-12:01

If you have kids, do you have nieces, nephews, do you know a kid, have you ever seen a kid?

    12:03-12:04

    Just imagine this scenario.

    12:07-12:07

    Okay?

    12:08-12:23

This kid comes to you and says, "I want a pony." And you say, "Well, you can't have a pony." And your kid says, "Well, that's not fair." that that's not an issue of fairness, right?

    12:25-12:36

The only way that would be an issue of fairness would be if the law says every single kid in the United States of America is entitled to and promised a pony from their parents.

    12:37-12:41

If that were the case, then that child saying, "That's not fair," would apply.

    12:42-12:46

But since that's not the case, that child saying, "That's not fair," doesn't apply, right?

    12:47-13:25

example, your teenager says, "I want to go to the party." You say, "You can't go to that party." And what does your teenager say? "That's not fair!" I know some teenagers are really gonna hate me over this. Send me nasty text messages with very angry emojis. I'm kidding. Look, it's because I love you that I have to to tell you this, but not being allowed to go to the party is not a matter of fairness because there's no law that says all kids must go to all parties.

    13:28-13:35

I hear some giggles of conviction, but here's the hard truth.

    13:37-13:39

We easily recognize this in children.

    13:40-13:41

    I want a pony.

    13:42-13:44

We easily recognize this in our teenagers.

    13:44-13:45

I want to go to the party.

    13:47-13:48

But some of us never grow out of this.

    13:50-13:55

Some of us, even as adults, say things like, it's not fair that I'm sick.

    13:56-13:58

    It's not fair that I don't have a father.

    13:58-14:04

It's not fair that my kids have a problem, and other people's kids don't have that problem.

    14:04-14:05

    It's not fair.

    14:06-14:09

I am not minimizing the pain of such things.

    14:09-14:10

    Do you hear me?

    14:10-14:14

I am not minimizing the pain of such things.

    14:16-14:17

    Because I've been there.

    14:18-14:19

    You know I have.

    14:20-14:33

And it is hard, and it is heartbreaking, but we can't just say that's not fair, when the real issue is that we have unbiblical or idealistic expectations.

    14:36-14:40

For example, let's talk about a husband.

    14:42-14:47

Specifically, let's talk about a group of ladies speaking on the subject.

    14:48-15:13

One lady might say, "It's not fair that I don't have a husband." But the next lady says, "It's not fair that my husband is sick." Then the next lady says, "It's not fair that my husband hasn't given me children." The next lady says, "It's not fair that my husband isn't taller." So the question is, if you're addressing this group of ladies, what would be fair?

    15:15-15:15

    What would be fair?

    15:17-15:19

That you each have the husband who is perfect in every way?

    15:21-15:27

There's only one lady that has a perfect husband, and it is not her, not her.

    15:27-15:28

    I said not her.

    15:30-15:35

Is it only fair if every lady has the absolute perfect husband?

    15:35-15:37

And you can switch that, make it wife.

    15:37-15:38

    Why don't I have a wife?

    15:38-15:39

    It's not fair I don't have a wife.

    15:39-15:41

It's not fair that my wife hasn't given me children.

    15:41-15:47

It's not fair that my wife, you know, isn't blonde instead of brunette or whatever.

    15:47-15:48

    What's fair?

    15:49-15:50

    What is fair?

    15:51-15:53

So do you see that this isn't an issue of fairness?

    15:55-15:56

You're like, why are you telling us all this?

    15:57-15:59

Here's why, because this is so important.

    16:00-16:12

Because when we say over matters like this, that's not fair, who are we accusing of unfairness exactly?

    16:13-16:14

    Who are we accusing?

    16:16-16:18

Right, I see where some of you are pointing.

    16:18-16:19

    You're accusing God.

    16:20-16:25

You're saying, God, this says that you're fair and you're just.

    16:25-16:27

But I'm gonna tell you something, God, you're not.

    16:28-16:30

Because you haven't been fair to me.

    16:32-16:34

    You're accusing God of injustice.

    16:35-16:38

So look, I'm just saying, let's have a clarification of terms here.

    16:39-16:47

If you're struggling with the husband issue or the sickness issue or the children issue, whatever it is you're struggling with, you can say, "God, God, it's hard sometimes.

    16:47-16:49

"God, you know the pain I feel.

    16:49-16:54

"God, you understand." But something that we cannot ever rightly say about that is that's not fair.

    16:57-16:58

because we don't want to accuse God of injustice.

    16:59-17:04

So in our discussion of justice and fairness, let's be accurate in what applies.

    17:04-17:05

    Reality check.

    17:06-17:07

    Reality check about injustice.

    17:08-17:09

I'm gonna go through these quickly.

    17:11-17:13

    Reality check about injustice.

    17:13-17:14

    Number one, God hates injustice.

    17:16-17:17

    God hates injustice.

    17:18-17:25

Proverbs 20, 23 says, "Unequal weights are an abomination to the Lord, "and false scales are not good." Unequal weight?

    17:25-17:27

    Unequal weights are an abomination?

    17:28-17:30

Like why is God so fired up about unequal weights?

    17:32-17:33

    It's the unfairness of it.

    17:34-17:52

You see, unequal weights, it's taking you to the marketplace where it says this costs $5 a pound, and you think you're buying a pound, but my scales are rigged so they read a pound, but you're only getting, you know, three quarters of a pound maybe or whatever, and I'm ripping you off.

    17:52-17:53

    God hates that.

    17:54-17:57

God hates people being intentionally ripped off.

    17:57-18:01

And that verse draws to the bigger principle.

    18:01-18:06

We could spend so much time on so many other verses, but point is this, God hates injustice.

    18:08-18:10

Secondly, God's people should hate injustice too.

    18:11-18:13

God's people should hate injustice too.

    18:14-18:16

Has he told you, O man, what is good?

    18:17-18:25

And what does the Lord require of you but to, there it is, do justice and love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.

    18:26-18:45

There's something in us, especially God's people, there's something in us that should rage against true injustice, racism or police brutality or sexual assault or abuse or false allegations for all of those things.

    18:46-18:52

There's something that should rage in our hearts against injustice because God himself hates injustice.

    18:52-18:57

Thirdly, injustice exists everywhere on every level.

    18:59-19:09

Whether it's national, governmental scale, to corporate scale, to personal scale, in courts and in sports, every arena of life, there's injustice.

    19:11-19:18

Okay, well if God hates it, and it's everywhere, why isn't He doing anything about it?

    19:18-19:23

Well, number four, Jesus will eliminate all injustice when He returns.

    19:25-19:28

Jesus will eliminate all injustice when He returns.

    19:28-19:34

Isaiah 9:7 "Of the increase of His government and of peace, there will be no end.

    19:34-19:54

On the throne of David and over His kingdom, to establish it and uphold it with justice and with righteousness, from this time forth and forevermore, the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this." come a time when Christ returns and He sets up His kingdom on this earth.

    19:55-20:19

Justice will always be perfectly carried out everywhere at every time because the King of righteousness is going to make sure of that. Then fifthly, we need to learn, we need to learn to live with injustice until then. We need to learn to live with injustice until then.

    20:20-20:23

Kind of like what we talked about last week, content, right?

    20:23-20:24

    Learn to be content.

    20:26-20:34

As we close here, with all this talk of injustice, the question is, what do you do when it lands on your lap?

    20:35-20:37

What do you do when injustice lands on your lap?

    20:39-20:41

For example, maybe it's your workplace.

    20:41-20:42

    You work so hard.

    20:43-21:02

You work so hard and you toe the line and you keep the rules and you got this co-worker who's just constantly goofing off and always in late, out early, and promotion is coming, and your co-worker gets the promotion and you're passed over.

    21:03-21:04

    How do you handle that?

    21:06-21:10

Or what about this completely hypothetical scenario?

    21:11-21:21

When you're in a whole line of cars and you're all speeding, but your car is the one that gets picked out and pulled over and you get a ticket.

    21:22-21:24

All right, maybe that one wasn't completely hypothetical.

    21:25-21:30

Like that one sounds like it's coming from a place of deep personal hurt, Pastor Jeff, it is.

    21:33-21:34

That's really not an issue of fairness, actually.

    21:36-21:41

Because I was, just because I was guilty with a group of guilty people doesn't mean I wasn't guilty.

    21:42-21:44

It took me a long time to learn that.

    21:46-21:48

But what do we do when injustice lands on our lap?

    21:49-21:50

    Flip over a few pages.

    21:50-21:52

We're going to go through this very quickly as we close here.

    21:53-21:58

I could spend so much time on this, but I can't leave you without this to chew on.

    21:59-22:02

We need to learn to live with injustice until then.

    22:02-22:07

    Romans 12, verses 17 through 21.

    22:08-22:11

Here's the same guy that dealt with all this injustice.

    22:12-22:14

Look what he wrote under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

    22:14-22:22

Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

    22:23-22:27

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

    22:28-22:37

Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is mine, I will repay," says the Lord.

    22:39-22:41

To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him.

    22:42-22:44

If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

    22:44-23:01

For by so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head to not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." So, as we close here, three questions to answer when you are faced with personal injustice.

    23:02-23:03

Three questions you have to answer.

    23:03-23:06

The first question is this, should I bring this injustice to light?

    23:08-23:10

Should I bring this injustice to light?

    23:10-23:12

You have to ask that one first.

    23:13-23:23

Because as much in our culture as we love to sue and we love to protest, the truth is not every injustice needs to be broadcast.

    23:25-23:35

But, everybody say but, but if people are being hurt or abused, including you.

    23:36-23:41

If laws are being broken, you have to make it known.

    23:43-23:51

In other cases, if it's just an unfairness inflicted upon you, I'll go to question two.

    23:52-23:55

Letter B, can I trust God to bring justice?

    23:56-23:58

Can I trust God to bring justice?

    24:00-24:09

Never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, or leave room, or give place to the wrath of God.

    24:12-24:14

God wants justice even more than you do.

    24:15-24:19

And he has promised to bring it sooner or later, right?

    24:19-24:21

Sooner or later, he's going to bring justice.

    24:24-24:29

So if God says he is going to avenge, what place do we have to step in and try to do it for him?

    24:31-24:33

But this is a matter of faith.

    24:33-24:37

Either you take God and His Word, you trust God's Word, or you don't.

    24:37-24:43

But if you say you trust God's Word, you're going to have to trust that He will bring justice sooner or later.

    24:45-24:46

Can I trust God to bring justice?

    24:47-24:54

And finally, this is a hard truth, a hard question to ask yourself.

    24:54-24:57

How can I bless those who are being unjust towards me?

    24:59-25:03

How can I bless those who are being unjust towards me?

    25:05-25:09

So what do I do when I'm facing an injustice?

    25:09-25:15

It's not a matter of abuse or anything illegal, but it's just an unfair treatment at work or whatever.

    25:15-25:16

    What do I do?

    25:17-25:20

What you do is you repay evil with good.

    25:21-25:26

And I've got to tell you as a young Christian, when I read this, I completely misunderstood it.

    25:27-25:31

It says that you will heap burning coals on their head.

    25:32-25:35

I had this picture of like modern day Sodom and Gomorrah.

    25:36-25:42

Like if I do good to somebody that does me bad, God's going to like rain hellfire down on their heads.

    25:42-25:43

    Like, ah!

    25:43-25:47

And that was this picture I had in mind and that has nothing to do with that.

    25:48-25:51

I was kind of disappointed to find out, honestly.

    25:52-25:55

This is actually an Egyptian custom of repentance.

    25:56-26:04

that they would take an insulated pot and put burning coals in the pot and walk around with it on their heads, it was a sign of repentance.

    26:05-26:11

You know, sort of like the Jewish custom was sackcloth and ashes, that was the Egyptian custom.

    26:12-26:14

    Burning coals on your head.

    26:16-26:26

Like, wait a second, you're telling me that I'm being treated unfairly, so I need to look for ways to bless those who are being unjust towards me.

    26:26-26:29

Yeah, that's exactly what God said.

    26:31-26:32

    Because here's the alternative.

    26:33-26:49

You can become bitter and nasty and vocal and cantankerous about it, and everybody, including the person that's causing you the injustice, is going to look at you and say, oh, well, he obviously deserves to be treated like that.

    26:50-26:51

    Look at how he's acting.

    26:51-26:53

Look at how she, listen to how she's talking.

    26:53-26:56

It's no wonder she got passed over for that.

    26:56-26:57

    Listen how she's talking.

    26:58-27:07

But, but if you bless, everyone is going to see, you know, maybe she didn't deserve that.

    27:08-27:14

And such conduct may bring the person who is wronging you to repentance.

    27:15-27:17

You know, you can bring that person to repentance.

    27:17-27:17

    You know what?

    27:18-27:23

I've really treated him like dirt and he's done nothing but do good to me.

    27:23-27:24

    What am I doing?

    27:24-27:25

Why am I acting like this?

    27:27-27:32

You can bring somebody to repentance through such conduct.

    27:34-27:39

Hey, nobody likes injustice, especially when it hits home.

    27:41-27:44

But it's not going away until Christ returns.

    27:46-27:56

So church, let's handle it the way Jesus Christ did the first time while we wait for Him to come a second time to eliminate it.

    27:57-27:57

    You with me?

    27:58-27:59

    All right, let's pray.

    28:00-28:04

Father in heaven, I pray that you would change our thinking.

    28:04-28:06

Your word tells us that we have to renew our minds.

    28:08-28:11

Father, I pray for my brothers and sisters here for two things especially today.

    28:11-28:15

One, I pray, Father, that we would never accuse you of being unfair.

    28:17-28:33

Sometimes, Father, we look at incredibly hard and painful circumstances and we say that's not fair Father, if there's anyone here who's stuck in that mindset, I pray that you would grant repentance today.

    28:35-28:41

Father, I pray that you would grant me repentance for the times that I'm tempted that same mindset.

    28:43-29:02

Father, I pray that we would be people who would, on the receiving end of injustice and the receiving end of unfairness, help us, Father, to be people who would to be a people who are proactive at blessing those who persecute, at doing good to the people who would do us wrong.

    29:04-29:15

It goes against our natural, human, sinful, self-centered thinking, but it totally lines up with the kind of God that you are.

    29:17-29:19

    Transform our thinking today, Father.

    29:20-29:30

Let us joyfully bear the weight of injustice until the King returns to set up perfect justice on this earth.

    29:31-29:38

It is in that King's name, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, the King of Kings, that we pray. Amen.
