Open up to 1 Corinthians 2.

    00:47-00:49

Let's just pause for a moment.

    00:49-00:54

Please pray for me to be faithful to clearly communicate God's Word.

    00:54-00:57

And I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive it.

    00:58-01:03

    This is a complicated passage.

    01:05-01:10

But I think that's one of the great things about expository preaching.

    01:10-01:18

It allows us to slow down and see what exactly it is that God actually said in His Word.

    01:18-01:30

Sometimes it's a passage that we have read through quickly so many times, like, "I'm not quite sure what's going on there, but next." And there's so much here that the Lord wants to teach us.

    01:30-01:37

So please pray for me to be clear and accurate and I'll pray for you to receive it.

    01:38-01:39

Alright? Let's just take a moment.

    01:48-01:51

Father in Heaven, we need Your Spirit, and we always do.

    01:52-01:58

I guess sometimes I feel it and I'm more aware of it than others.

    01:58-02:01

This is one of those times for a lot of reasons.

    02:03-02:09

I pray that Your Spirit and Your Word would do what only You can do.

    02:11-02:15

Glorify Your name as we spend some time in Your Word today, Father, in Jesus' name.

    02:15-02:21

All of God's people said, "Amen." Amen.

    02:21-02:25

    You know, I try.

    02:29-02:35

But it gets harder and harder to keep up with the language that these kids are using these days.

    02:38-02:44

Since I'm working with the youth group, I really wanna speak their language, but I'll be honest with you, I don't get it.

    02:46-02:46

    I don't get it.

    02:46-02:49

I'm not sure Justin, you still get it anymore.

    02:51-02:52

    Mid, see, he gets it.

    02:56-02:59

I just find myself so often, I don't get it.

    02:59-03:00

    I don't get what you're saying.

    03:01-03:06

Like Pastor Taylor, a couple of weeks ago, dropped the six, seven thing.

    03:06-03:11

Do you know like dictionary.com or something made that the word of the year?

    03:11-03:12

    Did you know that?

    03:14-03:16

I don't, and do you know where that's from?

    03:16-03:18

It's from some basketball player that's six, seven.

    03:18-03:19

    Like, aren't they all?

    03:23-03:24

    I don't get it.

    03:25-03:30

I don't get it when the kids say words like skibbity toilet riz.

    03:30-04:05

Have you heard this one? I had to have somebody explain it to me and I still didn't quite understand it, but that is a thing and I don't get it. I just don't get it. I remember many years ago when the nieces on my wife's side were younger, probably teenagers-ish, but one family gathered. It was Thanksgiving, Christmas, whatever. I just remember the three girls were just walking around going, "I just bought a new alligator purse at Walmart for 4.99." And then they would laugh hysterically.

    04:08-04:10

So I'm like, well, I went in on the hilarity.

    04:11-04:15

So I'm like, "Well, I just bought a new alligator purse at Walmart for 4.99." And everybody laughed hysterically.

    04:16-04:17

    I don't get it.

    04:19-04:24

I don't get, I don't get the Lulu and zhuzh it up.

    04:25-04:58

And by the time this is on our website, somebody's going to listen to this and be like, "Oh, those are old words. We don't say that anymore." I try. I don't get it. And see, that is the point of the passage that we're looking at today. Here's the whole sermon. When it comes to the Word of God, unsaved Many people don't get it.

    05:01-05:12

But those who are born again, who have the Spirit of God residing in them, we come to the Word of God and we get it.

    05:14-05:21

This whole section that we're in, in 1 Corinthians, is contrasting man's wisdom and God's wisdom.

    05:22-05:26

So last week we focused specifically on the show.

    05:27-05:27

    Why?

    05:27-05:29

Because Paul says he came in weakness.

    05:29-05:34

He wasn't like one of the lofty speaking philosophers putting on a show.

    05:35-05:39

Paul says, "I didn't come to you like that." So last week we talked about the show.

    05:40-05:47

This week we're going to talk about the content, the content of wisdom.

    05:47-06:33

Look at verse six. He says, "Yet among the mature, we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age who are doomed to pass away." Okay, so there's two kinds of wisdom. We talked about this many times in pastime, going through Proverbs, going through the book of James. There's two kinds of wisdom. There's man's wisdom, worldly wisdom, earthly wisdom, and there's God's wisdom. Okay? And that's what Paul's talking about here. Paul's like, "Don't throw out anything called wisdom because there's different kinds." We didn't come with man's wisdom, we came with God's wisdom.

    06:34-07:02

Now listen, when we talk about man's wisdom, we are not saying that man is incapable of doing anything with earthly wisdom. Man has done so much with medical advances, engineering, art, obviously. But, but, man's wisdom cannot do anything about spiritual matters.

    07:06-07:12

When you try to apply man's wisdom to spiritual matters, do you know what you get?

    07:13-07:14

You get one of two things.

    07:14-07:19

You get heresy or you get nonsense, or maybe you get both.

    07:21-07:25

But Paul here talks about the rulers of this age.

    07:25-07:28

It's not a wisdom of the rulers of this age.

    07:28-07:31

Like who are the rulers of this age?

    07:32-07:35

On Paul's day, right, scribes, Pharisees, Roman officials.

    07:38-07:41

    It's the important people, right?

    07:41-07:43

And who are the rulers of our age?

    07:43-07:44

    It's pretty obvious.

    07:46-07:57

Politicians, celebrities, the loud anti-God, actors, musicians, athletes.

    08:01-08:09

You know, church, if I live to be a billion, I will never understand why we take so much stock in the opinions of celebrities.

    08:09-08:11

    I don't understand that.

    08:13-08:22

You know, like somebody is paid millions of dollars because they're able to catch a ball, which is a talent.

    08:22-08:23

    Don't get me wrong.

    08:24-08:25

    It's a talent.

    08:25-08:30

But all of the sudden, we're like, well, I gotta hear what his political views are.

    08:32-08:33

    Why?

    08:34-08:39

Or you got some young lady who, she writes songs for a living.

    08:39-08:43

She writes really catchy pop songs about bad relationships.

    08:45-08:48

And we're like, man, I wonder what she thinks about immigration.

    08:50-08:53

Why do we care what, right?

    08:53-09:17

Or an actor whose very job is to pretend to be someone else, and they are fantastic at pretending to be someone else, and the world is just waiting to hear, "What do you think about God?" Paul says, "I'll tell you what to think about them.

    09:18-09:27

They're doomed to pass away." God's Word will stand forever, but a celebrity's opinion will be forgotten.

    09:29-09:30

    So look at verse 7.

    09:33-09:46

He says, "But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.

    09:47-09:59

None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." So you hear Paul talking about the secret wisdom.

    09:59-10:10

These are spiritual truths that man cannot know unless God reveals them.

    10:13-10:26

God has revealed knowledge about Himself, Paul says, for the glory of His people, and he says those who are not born again, they don't get it.

    10:27-10:29

    They don't get it.

    10:29-10:31

That's why he says, "None understood.

    10:32-10:38

None of the rulers of this age understood." They don't get it.

    10:44-10:45

    They can't get it.

    10:48-10:53

Paul says in verse 8, here's an obvious point that they don't get it.

    10:55-10:59

God showed up in the flesh and they nailed Him to a cross.

    10:59-11:04

Like do you think for a second if they really understood who Jesus is that they would have crucified Him?

    11:05-11:09

Do you think for a second if they're like, "Well, this is the God who created me.

    11:09-11:12

This is the God who's ultimately going to judge me, and He's here right now.

    11:12-11:15

What should we do with Him?" Do you think they would have killed Him if they got that?

    11:17-11:17

    Obviously not.

    11:20-11:46

Now look at verse 9, he says, "But as it is written, 'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.'" So here Paul is paraphrasing concepts from the book of Isaiah, specifically Isaiah 64 verse 4.

    11:47-12:02

Now listen, when people read this verse, people immediately want to interpret this as, "You can't believe how awesome heaven is." "You can't believe the things that God has prepared for us." And that's really not what this verse is about at all.

    12:04-12:14

Listen, this verse is about unbelievers not being able to understand salvation.

    12:15-12:52

Unbelievers don't get it. That's what this verse is about. Look at it again. He's saying that spiritual truths about salvation can't be obtained Through natural processes look at look at it again. He says what no I has seen nor ear heard He's saying unsaved people can't understand spiritual truths by external means Meaning, you can't look at a sunset, or the stars in the sky, and understand salvation.

    12:52-12:56

You can understand some things about the power and beauty of God, yes.

    12:58-13:03

But you can't look at a sunset and understand salvation.

    13:05-13:07

You can't perceive it with your eyes or your ears.

    13:08-13:41

Then he goes on to say, "Nor the heart of man imagined." saying that's internal, that you can't come up with truth about God from your mind. You can't just sit around and say, "I wonder what God's like," and you imagine truths about salvation. It can't happen. People try, though. You hear people say things like, "Well, you You know, I think that we're all God's children.

    13:41-13:43

I believe love is the only thing that matters.

    13:44-13:46

I don't believe God condemns anybody.

    13:46-13:49

And with all due respect, it doesn't really matter what your opinion of God is.

    13:53-13:57

It's like a fruit fly trying to figure out how an iPhone works.

    13:58-13:58

    It's not going to happen.

    14:00-14:04

And you trying to figure out on your own how God works, it's not going to happen.

    14:05-14:07

    You can't do it.

    14:10-14:18

Truth about God must be revealed by God.

    14:19-14:20

    That's Paul's whole point here.

    14:20-14:26

Human perception or wisdom can't contribute to this.

    14:27-14:33

People have no idea, externally or internally, what God has prepared.

    14:35-14:49

for those who love him. They're like, "All right, I have a question. How exactly did God reveal His truth to man? How did He do that?" Well, that's what he goes on to answer.

    14:49-15:04

Look at verse 10. He says, "These things," what things? "The things that God has prepared, content of the gospel message. These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

    15:05-15:23

For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. So Paul says, "God revealed the content of the salvation message." He said he revealed it to us, and us in the Greek is emphatic.

    15:24-15:27

You're like, "Well, who is us?" Well, go back to verse 10.

    15:27-15:31

Us refers to those who love Him, right?

    15:33-15:34

Like what is He talking about here?

    15:36-15:55

Well, really, He's talking about something Jesus already gave us a heads up on back in Matthew chapter 11 when Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have, look at this, hidden these things.

    15:55-15:55

    What things?

    15:56-16:00

Matters of salvation, revelation from God, truth about God.

    16:00-16:08

You have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, the important people, the rulers of this age is what Paul calls them.

    16:09-16:19

Jesus says, "You've hidden them from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children." That's the point of this passage.

    16:20-16:22

Do you think you're so wise?

    16:23-16:23

    No, no, no, no.

    16:25-16:28

God has to reveal truth if you're going to know anything about God.

    16:29-16:32

And God didn't reveal it to the important people.

    16:32-16:36

He revealed it to the children - people who love Him.

    16:37-16:38

    That's His point.

    16:40-16:41

    He gives an easy analogy.

    16:41-16:42

    Look at v. 11.

    16:42-16:49

He says, "For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him.

    16:50-16:56

So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God, except the spirit of God.

    16:57-16:58

    That's an easy analogy.

    16:58-17:01

No one knows a man's thoughts except that man.

    17:04-17:09

I mean, I can wonder all the live long day what Bob Brown thinks.

    17:11-17:13

    I'm never going to know.

    17:16-17:20

his thoughts, his opinions, his hopes, his dreams, his fears.

    17:20-17:21

    That's all within him.

    17:22-17:27

Nobody knows that about Bob Brown the way Bob Brown knows that about Bob Brown, right?

    17:27-17:33

And the only way I'm going to get a clue on any of that is if he tells me, right?

    17:35-17:36

And that's what Paul's saying here.

    17:37-17:39

    Only God's spirit knows God.

    17:40-17:48

No one knows what God thinks but God, and God's spirit has to reveal God's thoughts to us.

    17:50-17:52

    You're like, what is that?

    17:54-17:55

    He's talking about the Bible.

    17:57-18:05

This book is the Holy Spirit revealing things that are known only to God.

    18:07-18:08

    Like, wait, wait, okay.

    18:09-18:14

So you're saying that this book is the book of God's thoughts.

    18:14-18:15

Yes, that's what the passage is saying.

    18:16-18:25

Well, how in the world could an infinite, holy, awesome God reveal his thoughts in a way that we could understand them?

    18:27-18:29

    'Cause he's way above us.

    18:29-18:36

How in the world could he reveal his thoughts so we could understand them?

    18:37-18:39

Verses 12 and 13, Paul answers that.

    18:40-18:53

He says, "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

    18:53-18:55

And we impart this in words." Look at this.

    18:56-19:09

"And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the spirit." Here it is, "Interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

    19:14-19:16

He's talking about how we got the Bible.

    19:16-19:21

When he says we here in verse 12, he's talking about the apostles, right?

    19:21-19:23

He's talking about, it's obvious from the context.

    19:24-19:26

God didn't give you books of the Bible to write down, right?

    19:27-19:31

You might have some blank pages at the end of your Bible, like in the book.

    19:31-19:34

That's not for you to write your own book, okay?

    19:34-19:35

That's not what those are for.

    19:37-19:43

You're like, "Well, what are they for?" I don't know what those are for, but they're not for writing your own parts of the Bible.

    19:44-19:46

    That was for the apostles.

    19:47-19:52

The apostles, Paul's saying here, received the Spirit to put God's thoughts into human words.

    19:53-19:56

Again, this is something that Jesus promised would happen.

    19:57-19:59

Look at John, what is it, 16?

    20:00-20:00

    Yeah.

    20:01-20:07

It says, "When the Spirit of truth comes," the Holy Spirit, "He will guide you into all the truth.

    20:07-20:18

For He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come." The things that are to come, excuse me.

    20:20-20:22

This is how you got your Bible.

    20:24-20:42

God's Spirit gave God's thoughts to these apostles and He enabled them to write God's thoughts down in a book, an objective source of God's truth.

    20:44-20:45

And you're like, "Okay, all right, all right.

    20:46-20:57

So if that is what the Bible actually is, the thoughts of God written in human words, Why doesn't everyone accept the Bible as the Word of God?

    20:58-20:59

Why doesn't everybody just get on board with that?

    21:00-21:01

Why doesn't everybody just understand it?

    21:04-21:07

All that Paul has said is to drive us to this point.

    21:08-21:08

    Are you still with me?

    21:10-21:11

    There's no sermon today.

    21:11-21:12

    It's like Sunday school.

    21:12-21:13

There's a little sermon at the end.

    21:13-21:15

This is like Sunday school class.

    21:16-21:19

Everything he's saying here is to drive us to this one point.

    21:21-21:33

Understanding the thoughts of God revealed by the Spirit of God put in this book, understanding this book also requires the work of the Holy Spirit.

    21:34-21:50

This is what he is driving us to. Look at verse 14. He says, "The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him." Foolishness to him.

    21:51-21:56

And he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

    21:58-22:07

You see, Paul's saying the Holy Spirit gave God's Word to the apostles and he makes known the meaning of God's words to those who love God.

    22:07-22:09

    Non-spiritual people.

    22:09-22:17

Listen, you're like, "Why do we theology?" Because right now there's a whole lot of light bulbs that are going to go off.

    22:18-22:26

Non-spiritual people cannot accept the Word of God, and they do not understand the Word of God.

    22:26-22:28

That's what he says in verse 14.

    22:30-22:32

    Non-spiritual people cannot accept it.

    22:32-22:37

People who hate the Bible are just acting naturally.

    22:39-22:42

"Why do you hate the Bible so much?" Well, I'll give you a reason.

    22:42-22:45

He tells us right here in verse 14, "They don't understand it.

    22:47-22:48

    They don't understand it.

    22:50-22:51

It makes no sense to them.

    22:52-22:57

And listen, if you refuse to believe in the Word of God, you will never understand it.

    22:59-22:59

    Never going to happen.

    23:02-23:09

This is interesting, but like, what does this mean in real world application, Pastor Jeff?

    23:10-23:13

Well, let me tell you a lesson that I had to learn some time ago.

    23:15-23:25

I had to learn that you cannot put biblical standards on non-Christians for this very reason.

    23:27-23:31

They're like, "Can you be specific?" Yeah, how uncomfortable do you want this to get?

    23:32-23:37

All right, let's talk about people that are living together, but they're not married.

    23:38-23:41

They live as if they're married, but they never got married.

    23:41-23:42

    Cohabitation.

    23:43-23:46

I've dealt with this a lot, especially at my old church.

    23:46-23:48

    It was a downtown church.

    23:48-23:55

It was a big, old, beautiful building, and we would have complete strangers come in off the street, and they're like, "I want to get married here." Why?

    23:55-23:58

Not because they knew me or anybody else at the church.

    23:58-23:59

    It's just pretty architecture.

    23:59-24:03

"I want to get married here." But they were living together.

    24:05-24:12

We've had people like, "I want to join Harvest, and I want to actively serve at Harvest," And they're living together, but they're not married.

    24:16-24:21

And in all of these cases, people are outraged that we would say, "Well, that's sin.

    24:24-24:30

It's sin." People were like shocked and outraged that you would even hold such an opinion.

    24:31-24:32

What do you mean it's sin?

    24:37-24:42

And this is tying into Paul's point here, my friends.

    24:43-24:48

When a couple was in that situation, understand their biggest issue is not cohabitation.

    24:48-24:51

The biggest issue is they have no regard for God's Word.

    24:52-24:53

    That's the issue.

    24:55-25:01

And it's a scary thing because this is evidence that they don't have the Holy Spirit.

    25:03-25:07

And it's evidence, if all this is true, it's evidence that they're not born again.

    25:08-25:11

So you see, cohabitation isn't the biggest issue.

    25:13-25:16

Non-spiritual people don't get it, they can't accept it, they don't understand.

    25:20-25:22

Light bulbs should be going off.

    25:22-25:28

I hear this all the time, I hear this all the time and my heart breaks, but I hear people say, you know, people have adult children.

    25:29-25:34

I raised my kid in the church, and now he absolutely refuses to go to church.

    25:34-25:37

He doesn't want anything to do with church or Bible study.

    25:38-25:47

My teenager hates going to youth group, refuses to go, and they won't listen to any biblical instruction, and I don't understand why.

    25:50-25:54

I'll tell you why, if this passage is right, and I certainly believe that it is.

    25:58-25:59

The Bible makes no sense to them.

    26:03-26:04

    They don't believe it.

    26:06-26:06

    They don't get it.

    26:09-26:14

And when they come to church, they don't believe it, they don't accept it, they don't understand it, they don't get it.

    26:15-26:38

They come to church and They're like, "What's that all about?" They don't get it because it has to be spiritually discerned.

    26:42-26:46

You're like, "Oh, so you're saying I shouldn't drag my kids to church.

    26:46-26:49

You're saying I shouldn't teach my kids the Bible." Of course I'm not saying that.

    26:49-26:50

    Come on.

    26:53-27:23

But they aren't really going to get it if they don't personally make a decision to receive Jesus. That's what you need to drive them to. Look at verse 15. He says, "The spiritual person judges all things." Stop right there. This is a statement. We who are spiritual, we who have the Holy Spirit can judge all things. What's he talking about? He's just We're simply talking about this.

    27:23-27:27

The Bible, when rightly understood, makes sense of everything.

    27:27-27:29

It makes sense of the world.

    27:29-27:31

    It makes sense of man.

    27:31-27:33

    It makes sense of God.

    27:33-27:35

It makes sense of the way sin works.

    27:36-27:42

Understanding the world through the lens of God's Word when we understand it, makes everything make total sense to us.

    27:43-27:44

    We get it.

    27:45-27:47

We get why lost people act like lost people.

    27:48-27:48

    We get it.

    27:48-27:49

    You're spiritually dead.

    27:50-27:51

    We get it.

    27:52-27:52

    Bless you.

    27:52-27:54

We get why people get old and die.

    27:54-27:55

    We get it.

    27:56-27:57

    Why does that happen?

    27:58-27:59

    We get it.

    28:01-28:04

We get it when we have a loved one that's stuck in an addiction.

    28:05-28:06

    Like I get it.

    28:06-28:07

    It's a worship disorder.

    28:08-28:10

They're worshiping something and it's not Jesus.

    28:11-28:12

    It's an addiction.

    28:13-28:14

    We get it.

    28:15-28:17

We get it when a believer still struggles with sin.

    28:18-28:19

Like why is he still struggling with sin?

    28:19-28:20

    We get it.

    28:20-28:27

Because He's a spiritual person that lives in fallen flesh, so there's going to be a war going on until He's removed from the fallen flesh.

    28:27-28:28

    We get it.

    28:28-28:29

    It all makes sense.

    28:29-28:30

    We get it, church.

    28:33-28:37

We're rightly able to judge these things, and we're rightly able to judge what's happening out there.

    28:39-28:40

    We can watch the news.

    28:41-28:45

We can rightly judge all of that stuff, if you really understand the Bible.

    28:48-28:50

Like for example, what was the big news story last week?

    28:52-28:54

The SNAP benefits getting cut off, right?

    28:55-28:57

We can understand that through the lens of God's word.

    29:02-29:03

    Anybody not offended yet?

    29:03-29:04

'Cause you might be here in a second.

    29:07-29:09

Understand it through the lens of God's word?

    29:09-29:13

Look, the government doesn't need involved in that, in feeding people at all.

    29:14-29:15

    Whose job is that?

    29:15-29:16

    It's the church's job.

    29:17-29:24

And here's what should happen, the church should be providing for those in need who are unable to provide for themselves.

    29:26-29:30

But someone who can work and refuses to work doesn't get to eat.

    29:30-29:31

    That's what the Bible says.

    29:35-29:38

We can rightly judge all things, right?

    29:39-29:42

We rightly judge all things, things like racism is idiotic.

    29:42-29:43

    It's just stupid.

    29:46-29:47

    able to judge that.

    29:47-29:47

    Why?

    29:47-29:49

We realize we all came from the same parents.

    29:49-29:50

We all come from Adam and Eve.

    29:50-29:53

So if your skin's a different color, your eyes are a different shape, who cares?

    29:55-29:59

It's stupid, but people make that an issue because they don't get it.

    30:01-30:02

    We get it.

    30:02-30:02

    We get it.

    30:02-30:09

Why has Israel survived for thousands of years, even though everybody's constantly trying to exterminate them?

    30:10-30:12

Why are they front and center in the world stage all the time?

    30:12-30:12

    We get it.

    30:13-30:14

    We get it.

    30:15-30:19

That's what Paul's saying, "We judge all things." Like, yeah, we get it.

    30:21-30:24

But look at the back line of verse 15.

    30:25-30:38

He says, "But is himself judged by no one." "But is himself judged by no one." So Christian, don't worry about how the world judges you.

    30:41-30:44

Don't worry about how the world looks at you.

    30:48-30:58

You close-minded, anti-science, misguided, uneducated, unintelligent, fairy tale believing, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic jerk.

    31:01-31:02

Don't worry about what the world calls you.

    31:04-31:06

    They don't understand the Word.

    31:06-31:40

They don't value the Word, so they're not going to understand you, and they're not going value you either. You're judged by no one. Right? Now look at verse 16, "For who has understood the mind of the Lord as to instruct him?" That's Isaiah 40 verse 13. He says, but we have the mind of Christ." That last line, that's the punchline here.

    31:40-31:59

Everything he's saying gets to this one sentence, "but we have the mind of Christ." And if Paul would have just come out and said that first without any explanation, we would have been like, "What in the world are you talking about?" Well, who's the "we" here?

    32:00-32:01

    Why is he saying "we"?

    32:01-32:05

Why doesn't he say, "You have the mind of Christ"?

    32:05-32:05

    He could have.

    32:05-32:09

Why does he say, "We have the mind of Christ"?

    32:09-32:11

    Why "we" here?

    32:13-32:18

Well, what's Paul talking about throughout the first several chapters of 1 Corinthians?

    32:19-32:19

    What's he talking about?

    32:20-32:22

    Unity, right?

    32:26-32:33

Here's the point, unification can really only happen if we are all thinking the same way.

    32:34-32:40

If we have the mind of Christ, if we think like Jesus, that is what will unify we.

    32:41-32:43

That is what will unify us.

    32:47-32:52

This unity comes when I walk around here saying, "You all need to think like Jeff.

    32:54-32:56

You need to think like Jeff." That's the problem with this church.

    32:56-32:57

    Y'all don't think like Jeff.

    32:58-33:00

    That causes disunity, right?

    33:01-33:05

And then like Laura gets up and she goes, "No, the problem is you need to think like Laura.

    33:05-33:06

"That's the problem with this church.

    33:06-33:10

"Everybody think like Laura, we'll be good." And then Brian gets up.

    33:11-33:14

Brian's like, "No, no, the problem is "everybody needs to think like Brian.

    33:14-33:16

"You think like Brian, we'll be in good shape.

    33:16-33:19

"That'll unify us." No, no, no, that just causes division.

    33:20-33:22

We need to think like Jesus.

    33:27-33:29

You end with a statement like this.

    33:29-33:44

I couldn't just be like, "Okay, we have the mind of Christ, you're allowed to see you next week, so let's sing a song." That's such a statement that I figured we have to take a couple of minutes to unpack that.

    33:46-33:54

You have the mind, not, you should have the mind of Jesus.

    33:54-33:56

You have the mind of Jesus.

    33:56-33:57

    You do.

    34:00-34:03

And until you think like Jesus, church, we're never going to have unity here.

    34:04-34:06

We're always going to be fighting over something.

    34:10-34:12

So I do want to leave you with this.

    34:14-34:15

Just a couple more minutes here.

    34:16-34:23

So just grab your neighbor's sleeve right now, give them a shake and say, okay, the Sunday school lesson's over, now we're getting to the sermon.

    34:23-34:24

Take a minute and do that.

    34:26-34:27

Some of you aren't shaking hard enough.

    34:32-34:33

We're just gonna close with this.

    34:36-34:37

Like we have the mind of Christ.

    34:37-34:39

And you're like, well, how do I know?

    34:40-34:43

How do I know if I have the mind of Christ?

    34:43-34:44

    Well, Paul tells us.

    34:45-34:47

Under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul tells us in Philippians.

    34:48-34:50

Turn over in your Bible to Philippians chapter two.

    34:51-34:55

I know usually we like camp in one passage, but we can't just end with that statement.

    34:57-34:58

We have the mind of Christ.

    34:58-34:59

    What's that mean?

    34:59-35:01

Turn to Philippians chapter two, just over a few pages.

    35:06-35:07

Look at verses five through eight.

    35:09-35:15

Paul says, "Have this mind among yourselves." And you look at the context, He's talking about unity here again, right?

    35:18-35:23

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.

    35:28-35:29

Do you have the mind of Christ?

    35:29-35:30

    Well, how do I know?

    35:31-35:32

How do I know if I have the mind of Christ?

    35:32-35:34

Write these three things down very quickly.

    35:34-35:39

Number one, you know you have the mind of Christ when I don't insist on my rights.

    35:41-35:44

I know I have the mind of Christ I don't insist on my rights.

    35:44-35:45

    Look at verse six.

    35:46-36:04

He says, talking about Jesus, "Who, though he was in the form of God, "did not count equality with God "a thing to be grasped." I know I have the mind of Christ, but I don't insist on my rights.

    36:05-36:09

In Jesus' mind, he didn't feel the need to tightly cling to the privilege that comes with being God.

    36:11-36:18

And oh, Jesus would have had every right to demand everyone treat him as God because he is.

    36:19-36:27

Jesus could have walked around on the earth and said, serve me, serve me, get me this, fetch me that, now chop, chop, I'm God, serve me.

    36:27-36:29

He could have gotten away with that.

    36:30-36:32

He's the only person in history that could have.

    36:35-36:36

    He let go of that.

    36:37-36:39

That was his right and he let go of it.

    36:41-36:46

and you have to get to the place where you made up your mind that you don't have to insist on your rights.

    36:47-36:54

I deserve more, I deserve better, I can't believe you asked me to do that, do you know how important I am?

    36:57-36:58

    Not thinking like Jesus.

    37:00-37:11

See, the world says, "Hey, you go out and you demand your rights." But when you think like Jesus, you say, "Eh, I let go of my rights." When you do that, you get it, you get it.

    37:13-37:15

How do I know if I have the mind of Christ?

    37:15-37:16

Number two, when I act like a servant.

    37:17-37:17

    Verse seven.

    37:21-37:22

    Verse seven.

    37:25-37:42

He says, "But made himself nothing, "taking the form of a servant, "being born in the likeness of men." We've done sermons on this in the past.

    37:43-37:48

This one phrase really stands out to me more than anything in this whole passage, really.

    37:48-37:50

It says that Jesus took the form of a servant.

    37:51-37:54

And you know you have the mind of Christ.

    37:54-37:58

You know you're thinking like Jesus when you act like a servant.

    38:01-38:03

By the way, God's wisdom is opposite of the world's wisdom.

    38:06-38:11

If I said, "Who's the greatest person in the world?" You would say, "Well, it's whoever has the most people serving Him," right?

    38:12-38:13

    That's how we determine greatness.

    38:14-38:16

Who has the most people serving them?

    38:18-38:23

Jesus said, "The greatest among you will be the servant of all." And His life was an example of such greatness.

    38:28-38:29

You know you have the mind of Christ when you act like a servant.

    38:31-38:31

Like, well, how do I do that?

    38:32-38:32

    Well, you won't know.

    38:33-38:40

You won't know if you're a servant until somebody treats you like one, then you find out.

    38:42-38:53

I mean, if you walked in here today and I had one of them stickers that said, hello, my name is, and I wrote on there, my name is slave, tell me what to do.

    38:53-38:55

And I slapped that on your chest.

    38:57-39:00

How would that make you feel if that's how everybody regards you?

    39:00-39:01

    "Hey, they're a slave.

    39:01-39:06

I'm going to tell them what to do." You won't know if you're a servant until somebody treats you like one.

    39:07-39:08

But God took the form of a servant.

    39:11-39:13

When you're like, "I'm here to serve," then you think like Jesus.

    39:15-39:23

Number three, how do I know I have the mind of Christ when I obey God all the way?

    39:23-39:24

    All the way.

    39:26-40:03

Conditionally, no limits. Look at verse eight. He says, "And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient." How far did you take that, Jesus? Obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. You see, Jesus' way of thinking determined what he did. He humbled himself and became obedient to his father all the way to death.

    40:04-40:33

And not just death, all the way to the worst way to die, death on a cross. All the way and everything else along the way, all the way, everything Jesus did was in obedience to the Father. So how far are you willing to take your service to God and to others?

    40:33-40:44

How far are you willing to go? How much is too much? If you say, "Well, yeah, okay, all All right, I'll serve in the church.

    40:45-40:48

All right, I'll serve, but only when it's convenient.

    40:51-40:52

    You're not thinking like Jesus.

    40:55-41:03

If you're like, okay, all right, I know I'm supposed to give to the church, and the Bible says that, we've walked through that, I'll give, but listen, I'm only going to give a little bit.

    41:03-41:07

I'm only going to give like what I won't miss.

    41:10-41:12

    You're not thinking like Jesus.

    41:15-41:16

And if you're like, yeah, you know what?

    41:17-41:19

That person wronged me, and yes, they reached out, they apologized.

    41:20-41:22

    I will never forgive her.

    41:22-41:28

I will never forgive her for what she did to me, no matter how many times she says she's sorry, I will never forgive her.

    41:31-41:32

    You're not thinking like Jesus.

    41:37-41:39

The world says be true to yourself.

    41:45-41:53

When you think like Jesus, you say, "I'm obedient to God no matter what.

    41:55-41:57

I'm going to take it all the way." You get it.

    41:59-41:59

    You get it.

    42:00-42:02

Our worship team will make their way back up front.

    42:04-42:08

You know, we could go on and on and on about the mind of Christ.

    42:12-42:13

But really, it can be summed up in one word.

    42:15-42:18

If you really say that Philippians 2 passage, the word is selfless.

    42:22-42:23

    Are you a selfless person?

    42:26-42:29

You will be if you think like Jesus.

    42:32-42:44

But when you have God's Spirit within you, enabling you to discern and understand and apply God's Word, you will think like Jesus.

    42:46-42:47

    You'll get it.

    42:49-42:50

    You will get it.

    42:51-42:52

    Let's pray.

    42:53-43:04

Father in heaven, That's such an interesting thing, the way your spirit works with your Word.

    43:08-43:18

Somebody could stand up here and preach the most biblically accurate message and it's going to go right over the head of people that don't have your spirit.

    43:21-43:27

Father, when your Spirit moves in the hearts of people and your Word is proclaimed, you You do something.

    43:28-43:30

And God, that's what I'm asking.

    43:31-43:43

Is that You would soften the hearts of those maybe who are sitting here and are hard-hearted and haven't been getting it for a long time.

    43:43-43:47

Those who are closed-minded towards Your Word, they don't get it.

    43:47-43:49

    Maybe they think they do.

    43:50-44:00

And I just pray, Father, for Your Spirit For all of us, You draw us just one step closer to You today.

    44:03-44:05

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think the world is so interested in the “wisdom” of celebrities and politicians, the “rulers of this age” (1 Cor 2:6)? What does God say about them?

  3. What is this passage saying about how the Bible was written (1 Cor 2:10-13)? Why is this important for unity in the church?

  4. According to Philippians 2:5-8, what does it mean to have “the mind of Christ”? Give specific examples of what that looks like.

A Worthy Life

Introduction:

A Worthy Life (Philippians 1:27-29):

  1. Stand firm in Unity . (Phil 1:27)

Phil 2:3-4 - Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  2. Have no Fear . (Phil 1:28)

Isaiah 41:10 - Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Phil 4:6-7 - Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus.

  3. Receive the Gift of Suffering. (Phil 1:29)

Good morning That was better than I expected actually good job, so well done I don't have to have to have you do it again As Taylor said if those of you who don't know me My name is Brian and I'm not one of the elders or pastors here at harvest. In fact, just a couple years ago my family and I we just happened to wander into this church and honestly I don't remember much about the sermon. Sorry Jeff. I don't remember much about the service But what I do remember is it was the 11th anniversary of the church and you guys had a fish taco truck in the parking lot. And I tell you what, those fish tacos were Incredible and ever since then. we've had our assigned seats right over here first service at Harvest Bible Chapel. But in all seriousness, it's a it's a real honor and a privilege to be bringing the word to you this morning and service and tell you the real story of how my family and I were brought here by the Lord a few years ago.

    01:03-01:07

So to start out this morning, I want to ask you a question. Okay, it's easy so you can relax.

    01:08-01:15

But raise your hand if you've ever been a part of a group or an association or a club of any kind. Raise your hand.

    01:16-01:22

Okay, that's what I thought. I told you it was easy, right? Every hand is up in the room or was up in the room.

    01:22-01:26

We've all been a part of a group of some kind in our lives.

    01:29-01:40

And another question you can kind of think about here to get us started is some of the expectations or the requirements of being in that group.

    01:40-01:54

Some of them have been said or some of them were unsaid, but there's always these rules or these things that you need to do, some ways that you need to conduct yourself, some ways that you need to speak or even dress as being a part of that group or that club, right?

    01:55-02:00

The fact is that almost all groups have these types of things, these types of club rules.

    02:02-02:03

So let me give you an example for myself.

    02:04-02:13

Maybe you can relate to this, but I think back to those really amazing, fantastic, life-changing, seventh and eighth grade middle school years.

    02:14-02:15

    They were great, right?

    02:15-02:17

Maybe you had a similar experience.

    02:17-02:20

Maybe they were good for you as well, but they left a really positive impression on my life.

    02:21-02:29

And those seventh and eighth grade years, we had some club rules, whether you like them or not, and you were assigned into a club, right?

    02:29-02:31

And you had to follow these rules.

    02:31-02:37

And at least at the school I was in, at that time in seventh and eighth grade, a lot of these rules revolved around what you were supposed to wear.

    02:38-02:43

And this drove my parents crazy when it came time for back to school shopping.

    02:43-02:48

Because here's the thing, I didn't really fit really well into any one particular group.

    02:49-02:50

I was more of like a survivalist.

    02:51-02:57

I just wanted to get through the day, get through the year, get through seventh and eighth grade alive.

    02:57-02:59

    I did, thank the Lord.

    02:59-03:02

I just wanted to skate through under the radar.

    03:02-03:04

So what did that mean when it came to back-to-school shopping?

    03:04-03:08

Well, I couldn't buy corduroys because that's what the skaters wore, right?

    03:09-03:11

I couldn't wear too many polos because I wasn't preppy enough.

    03:13-03:19

And I couldn't buy too much Nike or Adidas because, well, I wasn't enough of a jock to wear that all the time, right?

    03:20-03:24

And I couldn't wear too much black because, well, that was reserved for the emos, right?

    03:25-03:36

If you don't know what an emo is, ask somebody who's around 40 years old, that's my age, and they probably still won't be able to explain it to you, but it was a thing and they wore black and so I couldn't wear the black, right?

    03:39-03:39

Okay, well, how about this one?

    03:39-03:40

We can all relate to this one, right?

    03:41-03:50

Whether you embrace it or whether you kind of cringe at it a little bit, but those of us that are natives born and raised to Western Pennsylvania, like myself included, we're part of a club too, right?

    03:52-03:54

You can always tell a Western Pennsylvanian by the way we talk.

    03:54-03:58

And I'm not just talking about the, you know, the downtown Yinzer accent, not just that.

    03:59-04:04

But if you're from Western Pennsylvania, you've probably used words like slippy or gum band, right?

    04:05-04:16

Or maybe you order dippy eggs at the restaurant, or you call your shopping cart a buggy for some weird reason, maybe you even use the word yinz, or when you go to the deli, do you order chipped ham?

    04:17-04:21

Try doing that at any other part of the country and you'll get some really strange looks, right?

    04:21-04:34

Or, okay, staying on the Western Pennsylvania thing, if you're part of that club, it's basically a requirement that you have to be over the top, passionate, borderline crazy in your love for all things black and gold, right?

    04:35-04:35

    Am I right?

    04:35-04:36

    Okay, all right.

    04:36-04:38

And if you don't believe me, just ask anybody.

    04:38-04:41

He's not here this service, but Brock Nardozzi, if you know him, right?

    04:41-04:42

    He's not from around here.

    04:43-04:45

    Born and raised Florida guy.

    04:45-04:46

    He's a Tampa Bay boy.

    04:46-04:51

And he has the privilege of watching sports with an over the top black and gold family, right?

    04:52-04:52

    We're crazy.

    04:54-04:57

Any call that doesn't go our way, it's the ref's fault.

    04:58-05:00

Any game that we lose, it was rigged.

    05:00-05:01

    Never our fault, right?

    05:02-05:03

    You get the point.

    05:04-05:05

    All right, one more example.

    05:06-05:07

bring it closer to home, right?

    05:09-05:10

    How about your family?

    05:11-05:13

We're all part of a family in some way.

    05:14-05:16

Does your family have any club rules?

    05:17-05:24

Any ways that the members of your family are expected to conduct themselves, to talk, to carry themselves?

    05:25-05:36

Maybe growing up your parents said things like, "Act like a Miller," or "Browns never do that." Or maybe it was like my family where the rules weren't really spoken so much, but they were exemplified.

    05:37-05:40

They were just things that you needed to live up to.

    05:41-05:47

Based on your family culture, you had to watch your siblings and watch your parents and learn.

    05:48-05:53

And if your family had a solid identity, then you were expected to toe the line.

    05:53-05:58

You were expected to do and say things that were consistent with your family identity.

    05:59-06:00

    You following me?

    06:01-06:01

    Club rules.

    06:03-06:03

    Okay.

    06:04-06:09

Now by this point, you might be saying, "Okay, Preacher Man Brian, this is great, but what's the point?

    06:09-06:11

    This is Harvest Bible Chapel.

    06:11-06:12

    We preach the Bible.

    06:12-06:13

None of this is in the Bible.

    06:14-06:20

So where are we going with this?" If that's your thought, I'm actually glad for that, because yes, we do preach the Bible here.

    06:20-06:47

And what we're gonna look at today is a specific passage in scripture that's gonna give us some very clear instruction, some club rules, if you will, on how we, as members of this family, this club, this group, those of us together here today, that profess faith in Christ, how we are supposed to conduct ourselves according to Scripture.

    06:48-06:57

So we're gonna look at what Scripture tells us about living in a way that is worthy of the gospel that we love and proclaim.

    06:59-07:01

But before we do that, I do wanna pray.

    07:01-07:08

So if you would join me in a word of prayer, and just like Jeff and Taylor always ask, would you please pray for me, and I will pray for you.

    07:09-07:09

    Let's bow our heads.

    07:14-07:23

Heavenly Father, I thank you for bringing all of these people together this morning, and those that are watching online or who will listen to the podcast.

    07:23-07:28

God, it is by your divine appointment that we are all here and listening to this today.

    07:29-07:37

And God, that is not because of me or because of any individual in here, but it is because of your divine purposes, and we find so much comfort in that.

    07:38-07:45

God, I just pray for this time that your word would speak loudly as each person needs to hear it this morning.

    07:45-07:47

In Jesus' name I pray, amen.

    07:49-07:51

Okay, so we're gonna be in the book of Philippians.

    07:51-07:54

So if you wanna turn there, if you don't have a Bible, there should be one in front of you.

    07:55-08:02

We're gonna turn to Philippians chapter one, And we're gonna look at verses 27 to 29, just three verses.

    08:03-08:10

As you're turning there, I just wanna give you a brief context since this is kind of in between series and we're just jumping into a book here.

    08:10-08:15

So again, we're looking at Philippians, the author of the book of Philippians, that's Paul.

    08:15-08:23

He's writing this letter, or he wrote this letter while he was in prison, and he's writing it to members of the church of Philippi.

    08:23-08:24

That's where the title comes from.

    08:25-08:27

That's a church that he founded on a missionary journey.

    08:28-08:30

And he's writing to them for several reasons.

    08:30-08:34

He wants to show them, thank them for their support of him.

    08:35-08:45

He wants to tell them about his circumstances, that he's in prison, and the fact that the gospel is still being advanced even though he is in prison, again, to encourage them.

    08:45-08:50

He wants to warn them of false teachers in their midst, and he wants to encourage and instruct them.

    08:51-08:56

And that's where we find our passage today, in that mind, of encouragement and instruction.

    08:57-09:03

So, if you would read to yourself as I read out loud, Philippians 1, 27 to 29.

    09:04-09:26

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you, that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents.

    09:27-09:33

This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation and that from God.

    09:35-09:46

For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe in him, but also suffer for his sake." All right, so let's dive right in.

    09:47-09:51

Starting at verse 27, Paul sets the stage for our instruction.

    09:51-09:59

In this phrase, "Only let your manner of life be worthy," there's actually a Greek word that kind of sums that phrase up.

    09:59-10:00

    I don't know Greek.

    10:00-10:02

I'm not going to try to pronounce it, so we're not even going to go there.

    10:03-10:22

But what this phrase, what this word is telling you, really, getting to the Greek meaning of it, is that we're to behave like the citizens that we are, not citizens of Rome like Paul, or citizens of Philippi or Americans or Western Pennsylvanians, right?

    10:22-10:24

    But rather, citizens of heaven.

    10:26-10:35

In fact, Paul tells us later in the same book in chapter 3, verse 20, you don't have to turn there, but it says, "But our citizenship is in," where?

    10:36-10:36

    "Heaven.

    10:36-10:51

Our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." to Christians. And he's saying that we are citizens of heaven and we need to act accordingly.

    10:52-11:18

So just like the groups we were talking about a few minutes ago, the skaters wore corduroys, Pittsburghers are nuts for all things black and gold, and your family hopefully has a good and noble culture that you're all aspiring to live up to because you share the same last name. And Paul Paul is saying we are followers of Christ and we are to live in a manner that reflects that.

    11:19-11:25

We need to, as they say, walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

    11:26-11:28

Now I want to be very clear here.

    11:28-11:35

Paul is not saying that we could ever live in a way that is deserving of Christ ultimately.

    11:35-11:41

Nothing we could ever do can make us any closer to actually deserving Christ's mercy.

    11:41-11:46

If you've been around at Harvest for any length of time, you know this, and that's not what he's saying.

    11:47-12:03

But he's telling us that because of our citizenship, because of our heavenly citizenship, because we are God's children through Christ, we should be acting in a way that shows that Christ is of infinite worth.

    12:05-12:17

We should be conducting ourselves in a way that shows that Christ is our supreme treasure, that He is worthy, just like the songs we were just singing.

    12:19-12:29

Now, before we go into the specifics of how we as citizens of heaven are supposed to behave here or our club rules, Paul gives us just a small check on our motivation.

    12:29-12:40

So if you look at verse 27, he goes on to say, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are," and then he goes on to list the things that we're gonna be talking about.

    12:42-12:53

But really quickly, he's telling the people of Philippi, "Don't do what I'm about to tell you because I say so, or because just because I'm going to come and see you." Paul doesn't know what the future holds.

    12:54-12:58

His goal, his desire is to get back and see them, but he might not.

    12:59-13:08

This is kind of like when there's a substitute teacher classroom, the expectation is that everybody's going to behave the same way, even though there's a sub.

    13:09-13:20

Or if you're in an office environment, when the boss isn't there, the boss's expectation is that everybody's going to show up on time, leave on time, and do all of their same tasks.

    13:21-13:29

Or if the parents aren't home, and it's a babysitter, or maybe it's a sibling, the expectation is bedtime is at the same time.

    13:29-13:32

Same type of snacks, same type of TV shows, right?

    13:32-13:39

It doesn't matter if the person in charge is there or not, but sometimes we need to be reminded of this, right?

    13:39-13:40

And that's what Paul is doing.

    13:40-13:47

We need to be reminded that we're expected to hold the standard even when the person in authority isn't there.

    13:49-14:00

So these markers that we're going to talk about for living a life that is worthy of the gospel, they are to be present, here's the point of this, they are to be present in our lives at all times.

    14:01-14:05

regardless of where we are or who we're with.

    14:06-14:06

    Why?

    14:07-14:13

Because Christ is our King and God is our Father and He is worthy.

    14:16-14:18

All right, how do we do this?

    14:19-14:20

    That was the intro.

    14:21-14:26

How do we show that Christ is supreme and live consistent with our heavenly citizenship?

    14:28-14:29

    Read 27 again.

    14:30-14:48

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind, striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.

    14:50-14:58

Like Jeff often says, that could be an entire sermon right there, or even a mini series, realistically.

    14:59-15:01

but that's not what we're gonna do today.

    15:02-15:05

Paul tells us that we are to stand firm in unity.

    15:05-15:06

That's the first blank in your outline.

    15:07-15:09

    Stand firm in unity.

    15:09-15:19

Paul is telling us that we are to stand our ground, to not back down, to stand with our fellow believers with the same goal and with the same focus.

    15:21-15:23

To put it very simply, what is the goal, right?

    15:24-15:24

And I would write these down.

    15:25-15:39

To put it very simply, we're all supposed to be glorifying God by obeying his commands, loving him with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, loving our neighbors, and making disciples.

    15:41-15:41

    That's our goal.

    15:43-15:51

And Paul is telling us that we are to do this as believers of one mind, one spirit, striving together.

    15:53-16:02

Not small factions or cliques or groups all striving for different things, it's somewhat similar if you've ever been on a sports team, right?

    16:03-16:15

You've got lots of different people, varying skills, different backgrounds, different strengths, different weaknesses, personalities, but everyone on the team, they have the same goal, right?

    16:16-16:21

They wanna do whatever they can within the bounds of the rules of the game to win.

    16:23-16:25

Well, it's the same way here.

    16:26-16:36

Just because the players have their unique ways of training and their own preparation routines, that doesn't take away from their steadfast determination to achieve their common goal.

    16:37-16:42

So Paul is charging us in a similar way as believers to be united in that way.

    16:42-16:50

And so you might be saying now to yourself, okay, that's great, but that isn't exactly what our global church looks like right now, is it?

    16:51-17:00

So many churches, denominations, factions, There's so many things that we can disagree over, even in a small church, a smaller church like ours.

    17:01-17:04

And to a degree, you would be right to point that out.

    17:04-17:10

But Paul is not telling us here that we all, as believers, have to agree on everything.

    17:12-17:20

But he is reminding us that Christ is our Lord, and if we call Christ our Lord, we're all on the same team, and we should have the same goals.

    17:20-17:24

We have a bonding of the Spirit because of Christ.

    17:24-17:26

    We are all heavenly citizens.

    17:28-17:45

And the best way, and here's the point of this, the best way, the only way, in fact, to stay united, and I would write these down, is to follow Scripture and to remain humble.

    17:46-17:47

    How do we stay united?

    17:47-17:51

We follow Scripture and we remain united.

    17:52-17:58

Paul tells us in chapter two of Philippians, verses three and four, and I think this will be on the screen, there it is.

    17:58-18:06

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility, count others more significant than yourselves.

    18:08-18:13

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

    18:16-18:25

Church, if we follow this command to elevate others, rather than looking to what we want.

    18:26-18:32

And if we stay grounded in God's word, we will remain united.

    18:34-18:39

I want to encourage you, Harvest, to say that I see this in many ways here.

    18:40-18:53

I see this church unified behind your support for missions in Thailand, for missions in general, but missions in Thailand with Barnabas and his wife, Martha, and their ministry.

    18:54-18:56

Your support for Choices Pregnancy Center, right?

    18:58-19:01

With our prayer services, recently we had one that we invited other churches to.

    19:02-19:03

    We prayed for those churches.

    19:04-19:05

    That is unity.

    19:07-19:13

And we're serving regularly now at Urban Impact, a very diverse group of believers.

    19:16-19:23

And we are united at this church through expository preaching and intentional discipleship.

    19:23-19:24

    So keep it up, Harvest.

    19:25-19:27

    Keep doing what you're doing.

    19:27-19:30

Let's keep striving side by side to God's glory.

    19:34-19:47

But before we move on from this point, I want to encourage you, ask you, plead with you, in fact, to pray for the continued unity of our church.

    19:48-19:55

I can say without any doubt that we will be tested in this.

    19:57-20:20

You know, as the church grows, as we continue on with this building campaign, as Satan sees hearts and lives and minds changed, we had a baptism this morning, As he sees that, our unity is going to be tested.

    20:24-20:33

You will be tempted to put your own desires, your own preferences above this command.

    20:34-20:42

You will be tempted to put your own wants, your own feelings, your own emotions above someone else's in this church.

    20:44-21:10

You will be tempted to allow your pride to cloud your judgment and to allow your pride to be your guide when considering those around you. But church, pray and resist the devil in this. We have to remove our self-focus and look to Christ as the perfect example of humility.

    21:12-21:29

Where he emptied himself, set aside many of his divine privileges to live amongst us, to live amongst his people and to be murdered by them in submission, in perfect submission and obedience to his Father.

    21:29-21:42

So with him, with this as our example, if we keep our focus on the goals God has given us and we stay grounded in His Word, and if we stay humble, we will stay united.

    21:45-21:49

Paul goes on to give us our second piece of instruction for this morning.

    21:50-21:59

So verse 28 tells us that we are to strive side by side and not be frightened in anything from your opponents.

    21:59-22:06

This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation and that from God.

    22:07-22:11

So the second point on your outline is to have no fear.

    22:12-22:13

    Have no fear.

    22:14-22:16

How do we live a life that's worthy of the gospel?

    22:16-22:19

We stand firm in unity and we have no fear.

    22:21-22:25

Well, who were the opponents that Paul is referring to here of the Philippians?

    22:25-22:26

    Who were they dealing with?

    22:27-22:30

Was it people saying mean things about them on social media?

    22:32-22:39

Was it people putting the wrong cream cheese on their toasted bagel from Pantera bread like they did to Jeff or whatever that was.

    22:40-22:41

No, no, no, no, no, no.

    22:42-22:43

    It was much worse.

    22:45-22:46

Could it be any worse, right?

    22:47-22:48

    It was much worse.

    22:49-22:55

They were living in and surrounded by a pagan society filled with debauchery and false teachers.

    22:56-23:00

They were living under Roman occupation and extreme oppression.

    23:00-23:05

And they were of course, dealing with extreme spiritual warfare.

    23:05-23:11

This is when the gospel is exploding after Christ's death and resurrection.

    23:11-23:14

And so the spiritual warfare was real.

    23:16-23:21

Translation, this is serious for them, just as it is serious for us today.

    23:21-23:23

But yet Paul is telling them this.

    23:23-23:29

He is telling them, even in the midst of these serious opponents, do not be afraid.

    23:31-23:35

And we have the same call on our lives today as citizens of the same heavenly nation.

    23:36-23:54

And you know, when I was preparing this sermon and thinking about this idea of living out our faith and striving for the gospel without fear, there's a family that I've known for years that came to mind, a missionary family that my wife and our family and I have supported for years now.

    23:54-24:01

And anytime that they correspond with us, they always ask if you ever talk about them not to use their real name.

    24:01-24:02

So we'll just call them John and Sarah.

    24:03-24:09

And at the time of this story that I'm gonna tell you, they were missionaries in a remote part of Pakistan.

    24:11-24:16

And their mission field was to Muslim shepherds, basically.

    24:17-24:21

And they were doing a lot of Bible translation and a lot of direct ministry to them.

    24:22-24:27

And they were dealing with some very extreme people, as you can imagine.

    24:29-24:39

It was inherently dangerous for them because they were white, they were American, and they were Christian, and they were living in a hostile place.

    24:40-24:53

So John and Sarah came home on furlough one time, and we were sitting on my in-laws' back porch and talking with them and hearing their missionary stories and what God was doing in their lives and in the lives of the shepherds over there.

    24:53-25:04

And they told us one particularly, in my opinion, frightening story from their missionary lives where, see, where they were living was outside of a city called Abbottabad.

    25:05-25:14

And some of you may remember the name of that city because that is where on May 2nd, 2011, Osama bin Laden was killed by US special operators.

    25:16-25:22

And here are some Americans, some Christians, living just outside of that city.

    25:22-25:27

And what they told us is that after that time, things got very tense for them.

    25:29-25:32

Much more tense than they even had been before that.

    25:33-25:36

The intensity was just dialed up in a serious way.

    25:36-25:43

And to make matters worse, at least in my mind, as I was hearing the story, they were living there with their young children.

    25:44-25:51

So after John was done telling us this story, you know, I asked him, I said, "Weren't you afraid?

    25:52-26:01

"Weren't you fearful of what was going to happen to you and your children in this hostile place?" And his answer to me, it was incredible.

    26:01-26:03

It still stuck with me to this day.

    26:03-26:10

But he said they did have fears, and there were many times where they were very stressed and nervous.

    26:12-26:13

    But ultimately, they knew.

    26:14-26:16

They knew that God was with them.

    26:16-26:25

They knew that they were in His will, and so their fears didn't keep them from remaining faithful to God's call on their family.

    26:28-26:39

And he went on to tell me actually, that he feared more for my children being raised in this culture than he did for his children being raised over there.

    26:39-26:40

    I'll never forget that.

    26:42-26:44

But what an incredible contrast, right?

    26:45-26:50

John and his family living without fear, continuing on in the Lord's purposes.

    26:51-26:55

What a comparison to the world around them and the world around us.

    26:56-27:06

They were living in obedience, and yes, they were nervous and stressed, and they even experienced the emotion of fear, but they stayed true to God's calling on their lives.

    27:09-27:12

Are you living in fear of anything this morning?

    27:15-27:22

Maybe you're sitting there and you're thinking, Actually, yeah, there's a lot that I am afraid of, that I am fearful of.

    27:24-27:31

Maybe you were afraid of COVID in a way that you realize now was not correct.

    27:34-27:41

Maybe you're afraid that if a particular political party stays in power, it's gonna ruin your life.

    27:42-27:48

Or maybe you're afraid that if a particular political party gets in power, that will ruin your life.

    27:50-27:51

Maybe you're afraid of running out of money.

    27:54-28:04

Maybe you're afraid of being rejected for your faith, or being alone, or being disliked.

    28:05-28:10

Maybe you're afraid that the world will influence your children instead of faith in God.

    28:13-28:18

Maybe you're afraid of what will happen to you at the office or at the school if you step out and share your faith.

    28:20-28:26

I could give so many more examples, but church, the world is afraid.

    28:28-28:38

And frankly, we've seen over the past few weeks from these sermons from Jeff and Taylor looking at what is to come from the book of Matthew, they have a lot to be afraid of.

    28:41-28:49

But we, as citizens of heaven, we are to be a shining light of hope and courage in the face of trouble.

    28:50-28:59

Not because we're strong on our own, church, but because Christ is in us and our God is sovereign and our fate is secure.

    29:01-29:02

    Do you believe that?

    29:04-29:07

Is that a truth that you hold in your core?

    29:10-29:18

If it is, but like me, you still find yourself fearful at times, we can be encouraged still.

    29:18-29:30

We can be encouraged by verses like Isaiah 41.10, up on the screen for you, where God says, "Fear not, for I am with you.

    29:30-29:33

Be not dismayed, for I am your God.

    29:33-29:34

    I will strengthen you.

    29:35-29:36

    Yes, I will help you.

    29:36-29:43

I will uphold you with my righteous hand." Don't forget who is telling us this.

    29:44-29:51

The almighty creator of the universe who put all of this into existence with his words.

    29:54-30:00

It is by his hands that we are being helped and we are being upheld and we are being strengthened.

    30:01-30:03

He will strengthen and help you.

    30:05-30:19

verse that I have gone to countless, countless times in my life. Again, in the book of Philippians. Philippians is an amazing book, isn't it? If you haven't read it lately, go back, read it. Philippians chapter 4, verses 6 and 7.

    30:20-30:41

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." And what? "The peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    30:43-30:53

Just like John and Sarah, we will experience the emotion of fear, and we will get stressed, and we will get anxious, but this does not define us.

    30:53-30:55

    It should not define us.

    30:56-31:03

We are citizens of heaven, and we know that our hope and our peace are outside of ourselves.

    31:04-31:06

They are outside of our circumstances.

    31:06-31:10

Our hope and our peace are in Christ.

    31:13-31:18

And finally, we come to our third instruction, our third club rule, if you will, right?

    31:20-31:23

So how do we live a life worthy of the gospel?

    31:24-31:36

Verse 29 says, "For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for Him.

    31:38-31:40

So how do we live a life worthy of the gospel?

    31:40-31:41

    We stand firm in unity.

    31:42-31:43

    We have no fear.

    31:44-31:49

And the third point in your outline is we receive the gift of suffering.

    31:50-31:52

    Receive the gift of suffering.

    31:56-31:57

    Okay, nobody left?

    31:58-31:58

    All right, good.

    31:59-32:00

Okay, this is a tough one.

    32:02-32:10

So that tells me you're getting it, 'cause we are all going to stand in unity without fear as we move forward in accepting our gift of suffering, right?

    32:12-32:35

If you're wondering if the text really did just say that we are not only granted our faith, a gift that we all willingly, excitedly receive when we put our faith in Christ, not only are we granted that gift, but in the same sentence, in the same thought, It says that we are granted the opportunity to suffer.

    32:38-32:39

    So this is a gift.

    32:42-32:51

And frankly, as citizens of heaven, to live a life worthy of the gospel, to show that Christ is supreme in our lives, our suffering for his sake has to be seen this way.

    32:51-32:53

It has to be seen as a gift.

    32:53-32:59

And in the same way that we freely accepted that gift of faith, we must also accept this gift.

    33:01-33:09

Church, this is a total, complete, perspective shift, isn't it?

    33:11-33:12

    It is for me.

    33:14-33:16

What does our society tell us about suffering?

    33:18-33:22

It says that we are to avoid it, all suffering, at all costs.

    33:24-33:29

We're supposed to cut out toxic people and things from our lives.

    33:31-33:36

If it doesn't make us happy, we're supposed to shed it immediately.

    33:38-33:43

If it's not bringing us comfort and peace, then we're suffering.

    33:44-34:33

So we're supposed to dump it or dump that person or whatever it is and put all of our efforts into finding our peace. And unfortunately, this idea has taken some very strong footholds in many prosperity churches in America, too. They would contend that if you're not living your best life now, that you are, if you're suffering at all, that this is not God's will for your life. But we see a very different picture in the scripture. So as a quick example of this, let's remember back to the disciples. Acts chapter 5. You don't have to turn there necessarily, but here in this part of Acts, we have the very beginnings of the early church.

    34:34-34:48

Just after Christ's ascension and Pentecost, the apostles are performing miracles, they're preaching, and large numbers of people are coming to faith in in Christ, an incredibly exciting time for the early church, for the spreading of the gospel.

    34:48-34:50

But this gets some people very upset, right?

    34:50-34:53

The high priests, the Sadducees, they didn't like this.

    34:55-34:55

    So what do they do?

    34:55-34:57

They threw the apostles into prison.

    34:57-34:58

They told them, "No more preaching.

    34:58-35:09

Into prison you go." And if you remember the story, an angel of the Lord comes and sets them free, gets them out of prison, opens the prison doors, and they're brought out.

    35:09-35:10

    And what do they do?

    35:11-35:14

They keep preaching, of course, right?

    35:15-35:17

And that didn't go over very well either.

    35:18-35:27

And so the religious leaders, the teachers, the Sadducees got together, and I think scripture would tell us, I could be wrong, I think it was all but one wanted to murder them.

    35:28-35:30

But that was not God's plan for their life.

    35:30-35:32

So instead of that, they were flogged.

    35:34-35:36

I've never been flogged, thank God.

    35:38-35:39

    But I don't think it's very pleasant.

    35:40-35:48

And if their original plan was to kill them, and now the backup plan is to flog them, you can imagine that it was quite a flogging.

    35:49-35:53

They were left very bruised and battered and in pain.

    35:56-35:59

In Acts chapter five, we see how they responded.

    36:01-36:06

In verse 41, it tells us that the apostles left the Sanhedrin rejoicing.

    36:09-36:10

    They were just in prison.

    36:11-36:14

They were just flogged and they left rejoicing.

    36:16-36:18

    Why were they rejoicing?

    36:19-36:20

Was it because they hadn't been killed?

    36:21-36:25

Was it because they got to live another day, see their friends and their families?

    36:26-36:27

Was it because God let them out of prison?

    36:29-36:31

Was it because their suffering was over?

    36:33-36:38

All valid things to rejoice over, don't get me wrong, but no, what does it say?

    36:38-36:48

They left rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the name.

    36:50-36:51

    Let me say that again.

    36:51-36:58

They left rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the name.

    37:00-37:02

They considered this suffering a privilege.

    37:02-37:06

They considered their suffering a gift, not a burden.

    37:09-37:18

So, if we're honest, when was the last time you rejoiced in any of your suffering?

    37:22-37:27

When was the last time you rejoiced because you were counted worthy to suffer for Christ?

    37:30-37:33

Well, if you're like me, you didn't rejoice.

    37:35-37:39

You complained to your spouse or to a close friend.

    37:40-37:41

    You vented.

    37:42-37:49

You asked God, "Why is this happening?" And you asked him to fix the suffering, to take the pain away.

    37:50-37:57

But here we have Paul and the apostles telling us that that suffering is a gift.

    38:00-38:04

Church, if this was our perspective, please catch this.

    38:04-38:14

If this was our perspective, that suffering for Christ was a gift, that we should rejoice in being counted worthy to suffer, wouldn't that make us more bold?

    38:16-38:19

Wouldn't that make us less fearful?

    38:20-38:22

Wouldn't that make us more unified?

    38:23-38:29

So if these are our commands in order to live a worthy life, this is what we have to do if we start here.

    38:30-38:40

We start with shifting our perspective and putting our perspective within God's bounds of what suffering really is and how we are supposed to view it.

    38:41-38:50

That will make us unified as believers and it will wipe your fears away.

    38:54-39:00

By God's grace, our suffering in the US hasn't looked anything like the early church up to this point.

    39:01-39:06

But I say honestly, I'm not sure that we're that far off in the near future.

    39:06-39:08

I think that it will look more like this.

    39:08-39:14

I mean, in Canada, not that long ago, pastors thrown in prison for doing what?

    39:16-39:21

Preaching the word and keeping their churches open during mandated lockdowns.

    39:22-39:28

Have you seen in the news, the Christians and the Catholics alike being thrown into prison with prison sentences?

    39:28-41:01

For doing what? For supposedly blocking access to abortion clinics when really all they were doing was praying for those babies, praying that they would not be murdered in their mother's wombs. I don't think we're that far off. And do we have the perspective, the right perspective, to respond in the way that the Apostles did when we suffer. And if we're going to proclaim Christ is our Lord and live lives worthy of the gospel, we should expect this. We should expect the suffering, and then we have to accept our gift and rejoice that we have been counted worthy to suffer for His name's sake. And I would contend, if you're sitting here and you're having trouble relating to this, if you're thinking, "You know, things are actually really not that bad. I've got little stresses here and there, but I'm having a little trouble coming up with an example of the last time that I suffered for the sake of Christ." If you're sitting here and you're thinking that, I would challenge you to take a really hard, long, serious look at and whether or not you're actually living your life for Christ, if you are making Him your supreme treasure.

    41:03-41:10

Because as believers, we should expect and accept our gift of suffering for His sake.

    41:13-41:15

So, how are you doing with our club rules?

    41:16-41:20

How are you doing with living a life worthy of the gospel?

    41:23-41:25

    Really, how are you doing?

    41:27-41:41

We have unity. Are you standing firm and striving for faith in unity and pushing on towards our goals of glorifying God by obeying his word, loving him, loving your neighbor, and making disciples?

    41:43-41:50

Or, Is there a brother or sister in Christ that you need to reconcile with?

    41:52-42:03

Is there some selfishness, some pride, some lack of humility that you need to repent of and eradicate from your life?

    42:06-42:06

    Fear.

    42:07-42:10

Are you laying your fears and your worries at the foot of the cross?

    42:10-42:16

and are you finding comfort and confidence in God's grace and provision?

    42:20-42:35

Or are you living a life of paralyzing fear that you know, that you know is keeping you from accomplishing all that you could for God's kingdom through his power?

    42:38-43:09

suffering. Have you accepted this free gift? Have you rejoiced in it? Have you rejoiced in being counted worthy to suffer for his name's sake? Or are you rejecting this gift and replacing the rejoicing with anger and frustration and desperation? So, as we close, I'd like to take just a moment to give you an opportunity to reflect on what God's word has said to us today.

    43:11-43:22

If you have a relationship with Christ and you call him Lord, and you're struggling with any of these things, like I am, let me encourage you that you are not alone.

    43:23-43:31

The bar is set very high, but fortunately we're not called to do this on our own.

    43:31-43:33

    43:36-43:42

But also, the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead is in you.

    43:44-43:50

And He has been given as a gift to help you, to strengthen you, and to encourage you.

    43:50-43:55

So how are you doing personally in these three areas?

    43:56-44:01

Which of these three areas do you need to allow the Holy Spirit to refine you today.

    44:03-44:10

So, before we pray, I'd like you to take just a moment after we bow our heads, take a moment of silent reflection.

    44:11-44:18

Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you, and if you already know, pray to your heavenly Father that he would help you.

    45:08-45:12

We are so grateful, Father, that your Spirit is here.

    45:13-45:17

Your Spirit is our helper and our guide, and yet your word is so clear.

    45:19-45:34

Father, and I pray for each person hearing this message today or at any point, God, that whatever Your Spirit spoke to them today, that they would be obedient to do what You have called them to do.

    45:36-45:52

God, I pray for our church, that our church would remain united, that we would resist the temptation to put ourselves above others, but that we would stay united in our goal to glorify You.

    45:55-46:12

God, I pray that the fears that were thought of in this room today, God, that they would be wiped away and replaced with boldness, and they would be replaced with trust in You.

    46:15-46:30

God, and I pray for whoever is suffering today, that your Spirit would do a miracle and shift their perspective.

    46:31-46:49

That they would count that suffering as something to be joyful about because they have been encountered worthy to suffer for your name. God, we love you. We praise you. Amen.

    06:27-06:31

How can I truly live a selfless lifestyle?

    06:32-06:38

Well, you know, the very next thing that Paul talks about here is the incarnation.

    06:40-06:46

He talks about the truth that God Almighty became a man.

    06:47-06:53

And in our vernacular today, we would say that Paul goes right into the Christmas story.

    06:58-06:59

You see, it's a story of promise.

    07:01-07:03

The Christmas story is a story of miracle.

    07:04-07:06

    It's a story of hope.

    07:07-07:12

Ultimately, as Pastor Taylor preached last week, it's a story of salvation.

    07:17-07:21

But this Christmas, I want you to see that there's something more for us.

    07:22-07:33

That the story of Christmas, the story of God becoming a man, is also the example of selflessness.

    07:35-07:35

    Look at verse five.

    07:36-07:43

He says, "Have this mind among yourselves." This mind, we're like, what mind?

    07:43-07:49

We already talked about that, considering others more important than yourselves, looking over the interests of others.

    07:52-07:54

You're like, man, where do I get that mind?

    07:54-07:55

Where do I get that mindset?

    07:56-07:57

    Well, look at verse five.

    07:57-08:13

He says, "Which is yours in Christ Jesus." If you are a follower of Jesus Christ, if you are a born again believer, I have great news for you.

    08:14-08:16

    You already have this mind.

    08:18-08:21

You have the mind of Christ because you have the Holy Spirit.

    08:26-08:34

And Paul here is calling us to imitate the selflessness of Christ that was on display in the incarnation.

    08:34-08:44

So if you're taking notes, which I always encourage you to do, four things the incarnation teaches us about selflessness.

    08:46-08:50

I was originally gonna call this, have yourself a selfless little Christmas.

    08:50-08:53

And I'm like, they're never gonna go for that.

    08:55-08:56

    Gonna be dignified.

    08:57-09:00

So we're going to say, four things the incarnation teaches us about selflessness.

    09:02-09:04

    Number one, write this down.

    09:04-09:07

You wanna be selfless like Jesus?

    09:08-09:09

    Selflessness starts in the mind.

    09:10-09:11

I want you to look at this verse six.

    09:12-09:27

He says, talking about Jesus, who though he was in the form of God did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

    09:28-09:29

    Stop there.

    09:30-09:32

It says he was in the form of God.

    09:32-09:34

    That's not something lesser.

    09:34-09:38

That's not saying that Jesus resembled God.

    09:38-09:42

The literal Greek here means that Jesus had the very essence of God.

    09:43-09:47

    Jesus is by nature God.

    09:47-09:49

That's what the original language means.

    09:50-09:58

And this speaks to from where Jesus' humiliation began as God.

    09:58-10:08

You see, Jesus being God went from the throne of heaven to baby in a manger.

    10:12-10:17

And I'm not sure we can fully wrap our brains around that experience.

    10:18-10:23

I was trying to think of some examples to illustrate this.

    10:23-10:26

And to be honest with you, I really, I couldn't think of anything of this magnitude.

    10:27-10:34

I thought, well, like for ladies, what if you're like the queen of England and then you become a street urchin?

    10:35-10:37

I'm sorry, that doesn't offend anybody, does it?

    10:38-10:44

Like, Pastor Jeff, my aunt is a street urchin and quite frankly, she doesn't prefer that term.

    10:46-10:49

Or like, okay, that didn't work.

    10:49-11:06

Or I was thinking like for guys, like what if you went from starting pitcher for the New York Yankees to third string pitching coach for the Pine Richland Little League Peewee team.

    11:07-11:20

And I just couldn't think of a good example to really embrace this concept that God Almighty became a baby.

    11:23-11:27

And then I started thinking, how could he be okay with this?

    11:28-11:36

To go from such an exalted position, such a lofty position to being a baby.

    11:36-11:37

How could he be okay with that?

    11:38-11:39

Well, here we have our answer.

    11:39-11:40

    It started in his mind.

    11:41-11:49

Notice it says, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

    11:53-12:03

You see, Jesus would have had every right to demand that people treat Him as God, because He is.

    12:04-12:15

But Jesus said, "You know, if letting go of that privilege is going to help people, And that's not something that I need to hold on to.

    12:20-12:28

In Jesus' mind, he didn't feel the need to tightly cling to all of the privileges that come with being God.

    12:32-12:42

And my friends, if you're going to humble yourself, if you're truly going to be selfless like you want to think you are, like Jesus, it has to start in your mind.

    12:44-12:55

You have to get to the place where you have made up in your mind that you do not have to insist on your rights.

    12:56-13:03

You have to get to the place in your mind like Jesus that you're not too important to stoop down and help somebody in need.

    13:07-13:13

And that's so counter to our flesh where we're constantly worried about my rights and what do I deserve?

    13:13-13:17

And I can't believe you asked me to do that.

    13:18-13:20

You asked me to scrub the bathroom here?

    13:20-13:21

Do you realize who I am?

    13:21-13:22

I'm the pastor of the church.

    13:23-13:24

And you know who I am?

    13:27-13:28

    That mindset needs to change.

    13:30-13:45

To, well, you know, if God was willing to become a man there's no title that I could ever have that puts me above helping people, right?

    13:47-13:49

So selflessness starts in the mind.

    13:50-13:52

    You gotta reconsider some things.

    13:53-13:56

Number two, selflessness is a matter of identity.

    13:57-13:58

    Look at verse seven.

    14:02-14:04

Again, you can barely wrap your brain around this.

    14:04-14:23

It says, "But Jesus God made himself nothing, "taking the form of a servant, "being born in the likeness of men." So you see this train of thought here.

    14:24-14:31

The way Jesus thought determined the way Jesus saw himself.

    14:31-14:32

    You see that?

    14:34-14:38

It says he made himself nothing or he emptied himself.

    14:39-14:41

    That's not subtraction, okay?

    14:41-14:44

It's not like Jesus stopped being God for a while.

    14:44-14:45

    That's not what that means.

    14:48-14:55

It does mean that he saw himself in a new identity.

    14:57-15:06

Notice it says, "Taking the form of a servant or a slave." You see the change of identity?

    15:07-15:21

Jesus said, "I am the King of heaven." And in the incarnation, he says, "I am a servant." Like, well, how far did he take that?

    15:22-15:24

It says he was born in the likeness of men.

    15:25-15:29

Jesus Christ in the incarnation totally identified with us as human beings.

    15:31-15:36

People thought of Jesus in form no different than a regular man.

    15:36-15:38

And see, that's the mystery of Christmas.

    15:39-15:45

That somehow Jesus is fully God and fully man at the same time.

    15:45-15:53

That God emptied himself of his glory to be confined to a human body.

    15:56-16:01

So you see the way Jesus thought determined the way Jesus saw himself.

    16:02-16:04

First a negative and then a positive.

    16:04-16:07

He says, "I don't need to demand my rights and privileges.

    16:09-16:21

I do see myself as a slave." And again, the point in writing this is an example for us, that we need to see ourselves as servants.

    16:25-16:42

You know, it's a tough sell to the world because the way the kingdom works, the way God works is always opposite of the way the world works.

    16:42-16:43

    It's always opposite.

    16:44-16:52

Like if I said to you, like who's the, like who has the most glory on earth?

    16:52-16:54

Who is the most important person on earth?

    16:54-16:56

Who's the greatest person on earth?

    16:59-17:06

Well, the world would start to think in terms of who has the most people serving him, right?

    17:07-17:14

Who has the biggest payroll, the biggest staff employees, like who is that?

    17:16-17:17

And that's how we determine greatness.

    17:19-17:27

But Jesus said, "The greatest among you, will be the servant of all.

    17:30-17:33

And I heard one preacher say this, and I love this.

    17:35-18:03

He said, "You won't know if you're a servant "until you're treated like one." And I thought about that this week, and I thought, you know, what if we had our ushers, our hospitality team, what if that we gave them a stack of those stickers that say, hello, my name is, and what if they took one of them stickers and just wrote slave on it?

    18:04-18:05

    Hello, I'm a slave.

    18:06-18:19

And when you came in here, they lovingly and good Christian love, they slapped that sticker on your chest and you walked around indicating to everybody that you are a slave.

    18:22-18:23

And then people started treating you that way.

    18:24-18:25

    They see your name tag.

    18:25-18:28

Oh, okay, hey, would you give me some coffee?

    18:30-18:32

Oh, hey, I left something in the car.

    18:32-18:33

Here, go fetch it for me.

    18:34-18:35

And then have her washed and waxed.

    18:38-18:40

How would you feel if somebody was treating you like a slave?

    18:43-18:46

And you see there's something in us that's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, no, no, no, no.

    18:46-18:48

    I'm not a slave, I'm nobody's slave.

    18:48-18:50

    That's beneath me.

    18:52-18:55

And here we see in this passage that that wasn't how Jesus saw himself.

    18:57-19:10

Jesus saw himself as, you know, I'm going to step off the throne of heaven to wash the feet of my disciples.

    19:12-19:17

And if Jesus was so willing, what job is beneath you?

    19:19-19:20

    What job is beneath me?

    19:22-19:29

because a servant only thinks about one thing, and that's serving the master.

    19:31-19:33

Do you see yourself as a servant of God?

    19:36-19:38

Four things the incarnation teaches us about selflessness.

    19:39-19:42

Number three, selflessness shows up in action.

    19:43-19:44

    Look at verse eight.

    19:45-19:56

It says, "The being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient point of death, even death on a cross.

    19:57-20:06

Again, follow this way of thinking because we're told to model that, we're told to follow this example that Jesus modeled for us rather.

    20:06-20:21

But you see this line of thinking, Jesus' way of thinking determined the way Jesus saw himself and that determined what Jesus actually did.

    20:22-21:04

Did you see that? He humbled himself and did what? He became obedient to the Father. Well, how far did he take that? All the way to death. Oh, and by the way, it's not just death. We're reminded here that He died the worst possible way to die. That's death on a cross. That's what Jesus humbled Himself and was willing to do.

    21:05-21:18

You see, the cross was designed for execution, yes, but it was also designed to prolong the torture for as long as possible.

    21:19-21:25

And it was also designed to humiliate the people who were crucified.

    21:27-21:30

That's the death that Jesus was willing to endure.

    21:34-21:42

See, Jesus went all the way, and he did everything else along the way, all the way.

    21:43-21:51

Everything Jesus did was to obey the Father and selflessly serve others.

    21:53-21:53

    It's astounding.

    21:54-21:56

This is God that we're talking about.

    21:56-21:57

    And read your Bibles.

    21:58-22:03

And I challenge you to find me anything that Jesus did for himself.

    22:04-22:05

    I don't see that.

    22:06-22:10

I never see Jesus saying, "Hey, I've been preaching for like a month.

    22:10-22:17

"I'm taking three weeks off." Or, "Enough of the miracles for a while.

    22:18-22:27

"I just need a break." Over and over and over, Jesus' whole life was about giving and pouring himself out.

    22:28-22:34

And you see, church, we've been talking about changing your thinking and changing the way that you see yourself.

    22:35-22:40

That doesn't mean anything if it doesn't change the way we act.

    22:45-22:57

And when we look at Jesus' example in the incarnation, I have to ask myself, and I have to ask you, how far are you willing to take your service to God and to others?

    22:59-23:04

Or let me ask you, how much is too much?

    23:09-23:11

You know, if you're like, all right, all right, Jeff, all right, fine.

    23:13-23:16

I'll help out in the church, but only once a month.

    23:17-23:20

And even then, only when it's convenient for me.

    23:23-23:27

I would say, well, that's not really thinking like a servant, right?

    23:28-23:29

Or if you're like, okay, I'll give.

    23:29-23:31

Oh, you, okay, we're supposed to give money.

    23:31-23:37

Okay, all right, look, I'll give, but I'm only gonna give a little.

    23:39-23:47

You know, like when you tip the waiter at Cracker Barrel, some people view giving to God as that.

    23:47-23:49

    Just gonna, here's a tip.

    23:52-23:54

    That's not biblical giving.

    23:54-24:18

If you're like, "I'll give, but only what I won't miss." I would say, "Well, that's not thinking like a servant." And if that describes you, if you're like reluctant to serve and reluctant to give, if that describes you, then you haven't changed your thinking, you're still holding onto your rights.

    24:19-24:27

You haven't changed how you see yourself because you're not seeing yourself as a servant, And you certainly haven't followed Christ's example because you're not willing to give all that you got.

    24:29-24:37

So how far are you willing to go to serve God and to serve others?

    24:39-24:43

We see that God in the flesh was willing to be selfless all the way to the cross.

    24:45-24:50

And finally, number four, selflessness leads to glory.

    24:53-24:55

Look at verses nine through 11.

    24:56-25:02

It says, "Therefore," okay, he was obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross.

    25:02-25:25

"Therefore God has highly exalted him "and bestowed on him the name that is above every name "so that at the name of Jesus, "every knee should bow in heaven and on earth "and under the earth and every tongue confess Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

    25:28-25:33

And now here you're expecting me to say, "Okay, listen, you need to make Jesus Lord.

    25:34-25:38

"You need to make Jesus Lord." And I'm certainly not gonna say that.

    25:40-25:41

    Jesus is Lord.

    25:42-25:43

    You're not making him anything.

    25:45-25:50

And whether you acknowledge him or you don't acknowledge him, He is still the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

    25:53-26:02

You can bow now, or you can bow later, but someday you are going to bow.

    26:02-26:03

    But there's a difference.

    26:03-26:05

Right now you have a choice.

    26:08-26:16

But if you need more motivation for selflessness, we have several already, right?

    26:16-26:17

we have several motives to be selfless.

    26:17-26:20

I can say you need to be selfless because then you're like Jesus.

    26:21-26:24

Or I can say you need to be selfless because then you'll be used of God.

    26:25-26:30

Or you need to be selfless so that there's unity in the church like we talked about a couple of weeks ago.

    26:34-26:35

Here's another reason to be selfless.

    26:37-26:38

    It's exaltation.

    26:40-26:40

    It's glory.

    26:41-26:44

See that first word in the verse, verse nine.

    26:44-27:00

Therefore, therefore, what he's saying is because Jesus Christ faced the ultimate humiliation, he experienced the ultimate exaltation.

    27:03-27:05

Like, well, how did Jesus get there?

    27:05-27:12

Well, it certainly wasn't through manipulating people, using people, stepping on the little guy, stepping over the little guy.

    27:13-27:18

Jesus took the path that, quite frankly, does not make human sense.

    27:20-27:21

    He emptied himself.

    27:22-27:31

He saw himself as a servant, and he was obedient to God, putting everybody else's needs ahead of his own.

    27:33-27:42

Like, well, why would Paul, in talking about the example of selflessness, why would he mention this exaltation of Christ?

    27:42-27:44

    You know, what's his point?

    27:46-27:47

Well, we're gonna play a quick game.

    27:47-27:48

    You wanna play a game?

    27:49-27:49

    It's an easy one.

    27:51-27:55

We're gonna play, see if you can find the theme.

    27:56-27:58

We're gonna put some verses on the screen.

    27:58-27:59

Do we have those verses ready?

    27:59-28:03

We're gonna put some verses on the screen and I want you to see if you can find the theme.

    28:03-28:03

    You ready?

    28:04-28:05

Let me go through these quickly.

    28:05-28:06

    Matthew 23, 12.

    28:07-28:11

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

    28:11-28:33

Luke 14, 11, "For everyone who exalts himself "will be humbled and he who humbles himself "will be exalted." Luke 18, 14, "For everyone who exalts himself "will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself "will be exalted." First Peter 5, 6, "Humble yourselves therefore "under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time "he may exalt you." James 4, 10, "Humble yourselves before the Lord "and he will exalt you." Do you see a theme?

    28:37-28:38

    I can do it again.

    28:39-28:40

    Actually, I probably can't.

    28:41-28:42

I'm a little winded from that.

    28:45-28:49

Well, here's motivation to follow the selfless example of Jesus Christ.

    28:50-29:12

Because the Bible says, "If you're willing to humble yourself before God now, "the day's going to come when God will exalt you." You know, Our worship team would make their way forward and our ushers.

    29:13-29:19

We're going to be closing in worship here in a minute and having candlelight.

    29:23-29:46

But you know, every Christmas, amidst all the festivities and traditions and all of that, I think even in our culture, you hear a lot of sentiment around, don't forget Jesus.

    29:46-29:47

    You know what I mean?

    29:48-29:52

Like don't forget Jesus is the reason for the season and it's more than about the tree.

    29:52-29:56

And I think in the church, we get that, right?

    29:57-29:59

Like we don't wanna forget about Jesus on his birthday.

    30:00-30:00

    Right?

    30:02-30:05

And then we see the nativity scenes, right?

    30:07-30:09

Maybe you have one of these in your house.

    30:11-30:13

You certainly see them as you drive around.

    30:17-30:27

But I think sometimes, look, even in the church, I think sometimes we reduce the nativity scene to some Hallmark movie.

    30:28-30:29

You know what I'm talking about?

    30:30-30:35

That we look at this scene and we conjure up this, This is what Christmas is about.

    30:35-30:41

Oh, poor pregnant lady had to give birth in the stable.

    30:41-30:43

And then they were like angels singing.

    30:43-30:53

And it's like this, it's this story of overcoming adversity and bless their triumphant Rocky Balboa hearts.

    30:54-30:56

They made it and they had the baby.

    30:57-31:01

And that's sort of what we reduce that to.

    31:04-31:09

But I want you to look again and see that this is so much more than that.

    31:11-31:25

It's the astonishing beginning of the story of how God put our needs first in the ultimate display of selflessness.

    31:26-31:30

Yeah, Jesus was born to an obscure woman.

    31:32-31:35

He was laid in a manger, that's a feeding trough.

    31:36-31:40

And he was born in a relatively obscure town.

    31:42-31:45

He was raised in another obscure town.

    31:48-31:54

And Jesus said when he was an adult, that he has no place to lay his head.

    31:56-32:19

He also said that he came as one who serves, and he was willing to die a painful and humiliating death, not for anything that he did, but for the sins that you and I committed.

    32:21-32:28

So when you see the nativity scene, here's really how you need to think about it.

    32:28-32:38

You need to say, if God so humbled himself, what kind of example is that for me?

    32:40-32:40

    Let's pray.

    32:42-32:42

    Father in heaven.

    32:46-33:00

I can't, if I had an infinite amount of time, I don't think I could explain this to the degree that would bring us to the place of awe where maybe we should be.

    33:03-33:06

But to consider the creator of everything became a servant.

    33:09-33:13

to live among us, to die for our sins.

    33:18-33:22

Father, your word tells us that we're to have the same mindset that Jesus had.

    33:23-33:26

And it's so lacking in the church across the board today.

    33:27-33:54

My God, I pray the gift that we all open and receive this year is the gift of truly embracing this concept of humbling ourselves and being the servant of all in the way that Jesus modeled for us.

    33:56-34:04

We pray these things, Father, in his glorious and incomparable name, the name above all names.

    34:06-34:06

    Amen.

  • 00:31-00:31

    Good morning.

    00:33-00:36

As Jeff said, please turn to the book of Philippians chapter 3.

    00:37-00:42

And if you don't mind, I'm going to preach myself this morning.

    00:43-00:46

I think I need to hear this message more than anybody else.

    00:49-00:52

So let's pray and we'll dig in.

    00:53-00:57

Our gracious Father, oh, you are so great and so good.

    00:58-01:08

You have given us all things in Jesus Christ, and your great desire for us is that we grow up into Him, into all the fullness of the stature of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    01:10-01:12

I pray that you will help us to do that.

    01:14-01:30

We will concentrate every thought this morning, every fiber of our being on your word and what you have to say to us, and that you would plant your word deeply into our hearts, and He would transform us into the image of our Savior, Jesus.

    01:32-01:34

And it's in his great name we ask this.

    01:37-01:44

There are things people said to me when I was a boy, when I was growing up, that have stuck with me my whole life.

    01:45-01:55

One of them was my cousin Claudia would say to me, "Richie, you're just like your father." And I was like six or seven.

    01:55-01:58

I was just starting to become aware of the larger world.

    01:58-02:00

I had really no idea what she meant.

    02:01-02:02

What do you mean I'm just like my father?

    02:06-02:09

Well, I need to back up a little bit because I was the baby of the family.

    02:11-02:15

My siblings were all a decade or more older than I was.

    02:15-02:18

All of my cousins were older than I was.

    02:19-02:22

By the time I was about six or seven, they were all in their late teens.

    02:22-02:23

    They were all adults.

    02:25-02:26

And so they knew my father.

    02:27-02:29

And my cousins really loved my father.

    02:30-02:38

They knew him, they knew his propensity to tease and to play practical jokes and to just kind of have fun with them.

    02:40-03:01

And so when my cousin Claudia would say, "Richie, you're just like your father." But she was really saying, "You little stinker, you're just like your father." And I didn't understand that until later in life, But if someone were to tell me today that you're just like your father, I'd take that as a compliment.

    03:03-03:19

When I got a little bit older, when I was in middle school, there's a lot going on in middle school, things are changing, and I started noticing girls, and I tried to interact with them, probably by being just like my father and teasing.

    03:20-03:25

And the usual response was met with, "Spronk, you're so weird.

    03:27-03:28

    "You're so immature.

    03:28-03:34

"Why don't you grow up?" Well, these girls, they could say that because they were mature.

    03:34-03:42

They were mature 'cause they wore makeup now and they wore jewelry and they were dating boys in the 10th grade.

    03:44-03:45

    Well, I'm barely 13.

    03:45-03:47

    I don't know what's going on.

    03:47-03:48

    Of course I'm immature.

    03:49-03:50

I'm still trying to figure things out.

    03:51-03:57

You know, one day I'm playing with my Legos and my Hot Wheels, and the next I'm looking at these mature girls.

    03:59-04:03

It was hard, and true, it was probably weird, right?

    04:03-04:05

The world was a weird place.

    04:06-04:12

I grew up in the turbulent '60s, you know, with the riots and all the counterculture.

    04:13-04:19

And I came of age in the 1970s with the philosophy of it feels good, do it, right?

    04:20-04:25

It was the '70s, the decade of free love and easy drugs and a lot of political turmoil.

    04:26-04:54

And I gotta tell you, all the world's influences, TV and movies, easy drugs, pornography, peer pressure, alcohol, it just kind of produced a toxic fog that made it very difficult to know what grown up like. And I wanted to grow up. I read self-help books. I read all the advice columns in the papers.

    04:54-05:01

I read horoscopes. I got advice from friends and advice from my frat brothers when I got in college.

    05:03-05:13

And the result of all of that was I just kind of flailed around doing adult things, but I just sunk deeper and deeper into sin and immaturity and weirdness.

    05:15-05:18

You know, all you kids growing up today, you've got it easy, right?

    05:19-05:21

Because the world's not at all weird anymore.

    05:23-05:31

But I was on the struggle bus when it came to growing up, and in the midst of those struggles, praise God, I was found by Jesus.

    05:33-05:38

So when I became a believer in my early 20s, I found I had a new challenge.

    05:38-05:40

Well, now I've got to grow up spiritually.

    05:41-05:43

    and he becomes spiritually mature.

    05:45-06:01

Well, I'll tell you for many years, as a young believer, I thought, oh, I gotta grow up as a man in the world, and I also gotta grow up spiritually, as though those two were entirely separate concepts.

    06:03-06:09

Because Bethany and I moved around so much in our marriage with the army, we never put down roots anywhere.

    06:09-06:24

I never had an opportunity to develop close friendships, develop a mentor with anybody, someone who could guide me into understanding that growing up spiritually meant growing up as a whole person.

    06:26-06:36

And I would even say it's not just physical maturity or emotional maturity and spiritual maturity, I would just say it's maturity, growing up and becoming mature.

    06:38-06:40

The Apostle Paul knew something about becoming mature.

    06:41-06:49

He had a very clear idea of what it meant, what was involved in the end result, and he knew it took a great deal of effort.

    06:50-06:56

So our first point this morning is, growing up involves exertion.

    06:57-06:59

We're gonna take a look at a bit of background on Paul.

    07:00-07:08

In chapter three, Paul rattled off all of his accomplishments, or as he phrased it, his confidence in the flesh.

    07:09-07:10

    Look at verse five.

    07:11-07:29

He said he was circumcised on the eighth day of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as to the law of Pharisee, as to zeal, a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under law, blameless.

    07:31-07:35

In modern terms, we would say Paul was born into privilege with a respected pedigree.

    07:36-07:39

He was raised in the most elite Jewish circles.

    07:39-07:43

He was educated in the Jewish equivalent of an Ivy League school.

    07:44-07:46

He was certain that all of his ideas were right.

    07:47-07:53

He was respected, he had authority, he had prestige, influence, and above all, he had a lot of passion.

    07:54-08:03

He was on the fast track to greatness in the Jewish world until Jesus took him down more than a few notches on the road to Damascus.

    08:04-08:08

You see, following that encounter, Paul took a different view of his life's accomplishments.

    08:10-08:11

    They're all worthless.

    08:13-08:17

And moreover, it required disciplined exertion to purge them from his life.

    08:17-08:18

Take a look at verse 7.

    08:20-08:25

He says, "But whatever gain I had, I count it as loss for the sake of Christ.

    08:25-08:31

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

    08:32-08:47

For his sake I've suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him." He says it's all a loss because of their surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

    08:48-08:50

He uses some pretty strong language here too.

    08:52-08:59

When he says all of his accomplishments were rubbish, he doesn't just mean some Kleenex or some apple peels in a wastebasket.

    09:00-09:20

doesn't quite get at what Paul said. The Greek word is only used here in the New Testament and it refers to human excrement and not in a polite or juvenile way. At the very least the Philippians would have understood Paul considered all of his accomplishments to be crap.

    09:21-09:22

Did he just say that in church?

    09:23-10:19

Yeah I did because that's as polite as I can be to get at what Paul is trying to say here? It's all crap, and there's a sense of revulsion about it. Paul is using strong language to impress on his readers that he is revolted by his former life. For Paul, it provokes a gag reflex when he thinks about it. So Paul has dug a giant cat hole and he's buried it all. He says, "In order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ. The righteousness from God that depends on faith, that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and share in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death." Wow, that captures our idealized image of Paul, doesn't it?

    10:20-10:31

After all, that's why we call him Saint Paul. He knows Jesus so much better than we do and he's just so far above us. We're right to put him on a pedestal.

    10:32-10:54

I mean just as he was a Hebrew among the Hebrews, he became the hardest-working apostle. He was the most outstanding apostle. He was always the brightest. He was always the best of the best. Right? That's how we think about Paul. We can't ever be like Paul. That's Look at verse 12.

    10:55-11:06

"Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

    11:07-11:24

Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it, but one thing I do, forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

    11:28-11:35

In his exhortation to exertion, Paul tells us two things, why we must grow and how we must grow.

    11:37-11:41

So let's look first at why we must grow.

    11:42-11:45

We must grow because Jesus has a hold of us.

    11:46-11:51

Paul says he makes every effort to take hold of his goal because Jesus has taken a hold of him.

    11:52-11:55

What does it mean that Jesus has taken a hold of Paul?

    11:56-12:05

Well, to be taken a hold of in the Greek has several meanings, such as to learn or understand something or to grasp something in our mind as a concept.

    12:06-12:08

But Paul is saying something stronger than that.

    12:09-12:14

It can also mean to obtain something, to appropriate a thing or make something one's own.

    12:15-12:18

But Paul is saying something even stronger than that.

    12:19-12:23

Or a third meaning is to seize, to overtake or overwhelm.

    12:24-12:34

In effect, Christ has swept Paul up by the scruff of the neck and yanked him out of the septic tank and he's embraced him within himself as his own.

    12:35-12:39

Think about, I'm sure you've all watched the videos, right?

    12:39-12:52

Of these soldiers coming home from combat and they come down the runway into the airport or into the gym or wherever They see their family and they just embrace them.

    12:53-12:54

And they're not gonna let them go.

    12:56-12:59

That's how tightly Jesus Christ has a hold of you.

    13:02-13:04

    Are you returning the embrace?

    13:05-13:07

Are you exerting every effort to lay hold of Christ?

    13:11-13:13

Second, Paul tells us how we must grow.

    13:15-13:18

    By forgetting and striving.

    13:19-13:21

    Look at verse 13 again.

    13:22-13:30

"But one thing I do, forgetting what is behind "and straining toward what is ahead." Sounds like there's two things here, doesn't it?

    13:31-13:35

Forgetting and striving, two different things.

    13:35-13:41

But really, they're so closely intertwined, it's all one effort, it's all one action on Paul's part.

    13:41-13:43

But we're gonna look at each separately.

    13:44-13:46

    First, there's the forgetting part.

    13:46-13:57

And I'm really glad Paul mentions this, because although Paul mainly mentioned all of his credentials, he may have also had in mind what he did with those credentials.

    13:59-14:05

You may recall Paul once zealously took hold of believers and had them in prison, and in some cases put to death.

    14:07-14:10

I think Paul had a great deal to regret and be ashamed of.

    14:11-15:03

His past could have been a huge, Huge weight that held him back from pursuing Jesus But instead he keeps on forgetting What he was and what he did in the past What's in your past what's in your present You have a pedigree you have education you have degrees influence prestige and well What about the other side of that coin You have pride, boasting, sin, broken relationships, broken promises, pain, burned bridges, self-justification, bitterness, self-pity, insecurities, has your life been full of hating and being hated?

    15:06-15:14

Divorce, broken families, abuse, sexual immorality, lies and more lies.

    15:16-15:19

It seems like a long list, but we all know it's just the tip of the iceberg.

    15:22-15:32

You know, in all these ways and more, we have sinned and wrecked ourselves. We have sinned against others and wrecked their lives. Others have sinned against us and broken us.

    15:33-15:39

And all these things could be a huge ball and chain, spiritually and emotionally and even physically.

    15:41-15:47

Because Satan the accuser, he's always lurking around to remind us about our past.

    15:49-15:57

You're worthless. You'll never measure up. You can't do this. I know what you've done.

    15:59-16:03

You know, you remember that time when you just fill in the blank.

    16:06-16:18

But the good news is your past is dead. God doesn't hold you responsible for anything you did when you were dead, and neither should you. You are forgiven.

    16:19-16:24

Your guilt is removed and so is your shame. You need to forget the past.

    16:26-16:30

Forget it. Indeed, the Greek word for forgetting is so strong here.

    16:31-17:05

It means to oblivious. Your past has faded into oblivion and God no longer brings it up. He doesn't think about it. He doesn't remember it. Satan does. Your flesh might. But beloved, what is in your past no longer exists. For you are in Christ Jesus. You So don't let the past drag you down in the present.

    17:06-17:14

Don't let it deter you from pressing onward for the future, which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus.

    17:18-17:19

    The next part is striving.

    17:20-17:21

    Look at verse 12.

    17:21-17:23

    Paul says a curious thing.

    17:24-17:25

    I haven't attained it yet.

    17:27-17:28

    I haven't arrived.

    17:28-17:29

    This is a process.

    17:30-17:31

    I don't possess it yet.

    17:31-17:35

I haven't attained yet to that for which Jesus took hold of me.

    17:36-17:38

Nevertheless, he says, I press on.

    17:39-17:40

    I forget what is behind.

    17:40-17:43

I strain toward what is ahead.

    17:43-17:46

I press on toward the goal to win the prize.

    17:46-17:49

Paul is using vigorous athletic imagery here.

    17:50-17:53

The Greek for press on is dioko.

    17:54-18:01

And it means to pursue, to aggressively chase, to pursue with all haste like a hunter in pursuit.

    18:03-18:10

It could describe a runner who has fallen behind early in an endurance race, but now, now he's catching up.

    18:10-18:15

Now he's exerting every spiritual muscle to reach the finish line.

    18:16-18:23

It's an image of a runner hurtling towards the tape and throwing herself over the line to be first.

    18:25-18:35

You know, it's interesting that the Greek for press on here in verses 12 and 14, it's the same word translated as persecuting in verse six.

    18:36-18:47

Paul is telling us is that just as I once zealously pursued believers in Christ, well, now I am zealously pursuing Christ.

    18:49-18:50

    How about you?

    18:50-18:51

    How about me?

    18:52-18:57

Are we pursuing Christ as zealously as we once pursued our lusts and evil desires?

    18:59-19:02

Or do we now have kind of a take it easy point of view?

    19:04-19:07

Do we think, hey, my ticket to heaven's been punched.

    19:08-19:10

Jesus is gonna bless me with my best life now.

    19:11-19:13

    I don't have to do a thing.

    19:13-19:16

You know, let go, let God, right?

    19:18-19:21

Hey, I'm just gonna take the easy victory lap.

    19:21-19:24

I don't have to run the race.

    19:27-19:27

    No!

    19:28-19:32

No, we are disciples, and life in Jesus takes discipline.

    19:32-19:38

It takes hard, concerted, striving, straining effort to grow in Christ.

    19:39-19:42

So study the Word to show yourself approved.

    19:43-19:44

    Apply it, do it.

    19:45-19:48

Spend time in prayer and meditation on the Word.

    19:48-19:53

Fast and deny yourself for the sake of gaining Christ.

    19:56-20:06

So growing up involves our utmost exertion to forget and press on, and growing up also involves right thinking and careful imitation.

    20:07-20:50

In verse 15, Paul says, "All of us then who are mature "should take such a view of things." Now previously Paul said, "I haven't already obtained all this." arrived at his goal, but he keeps striving to attain it. But then he says, "All who are mature should take this view of things." That seems odd. Well, the Greek word for "mature" is "kaleos." It means "finished, brought to completion, wanting nothing necessary for completeness and perfect." Paul used that very same word in verse 12 when he said he hadn't arrived.

    20:51-21:34

Not that I am perfect, not that I am mature, and yet here now he says all of us who are mature should think like this. Well, in other words, Paul is telling us that those who are mature are the ones who realize we're not mature. When we view ourselves that way, we're thinking the right way. So let's dive a little deeper into right thinking because our thinking reveals what we treasure. Jesus used the same word when the rich young man asked him in Matthew chapter 19, "Good teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?" Jesus told him, "If you would enter life, keep the commandments.

    21:35-22:03

He said to him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness. Honor your father and mother and you shall love your neighbor as yourself." The young man said to him, "All these I have kept, what do I still lack?" Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, "Go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, "and you will have treasure in heaven.

    22:04-22:24

"And come, follow me." Jesus said to the young man, "If you want to be teleos," that is, if you want to be perfect, if you want to be mature, "then unload your worldly possessions." And we know the man went away dejected because he had lots of stuff.

    22:27-22:30

Do you notice anything about Jesus' list of the commandments?

    22:33-22:42

"Whereas you shall have no other gods before me." And what about, "You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything.

    22:43-22:52

You shall not bow down to them and serve them." And where is number 10, "You shall not covet." And Jesus mentioned loving your neighbor.

    22:54-23:05

"What about loving the Lord your God "with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength?" The man's reaction to Jesus' exhortation to sell all his belongings identified his real problem.

    23:06-23:08

It's not that he had lots of stuff.

    23:09-23:12

It was the value that he placed on it.

    23:12-23:16

It was the way he thought about his stuff and his identity.

    23:18-23:20

He's an idolater who loves the world.

    23:20-23:22

He loved his stuff more than God.

    23:23-23:27

He wanted heaven, but he didn't really want the God who dwells there.

    23:29-23:33

He wanted to have eternal life, but he only wanted to run the victory lap.

    23:34-23:34

    He

    Speaker 2:

    23:34-23:34

    You didn't

    23:34-23:36

want to actually strive to win the race.

    23:37-23:39

He wanted the world more than heaven.

    23:42-23:45

Compare that to Paul, who counted all things as loss.

    23:46-23:49

Compare that to yourself, what you treasure.

    23:52-24:05

Now that account really focuses on stuff, but the broader picture is that what characterizes mature Christians is a rejection of and a revulsion towards worldly values.

    24:06-24:08

We're not to love the world or anything in it.

    24:11-24:21

This is difficult because we're so used to the smell and texture of our crap that we We don't even notice we've brought it into the church with us.

    24:22-24:25

We don't notice that we've brought it into our life in Christ.

    24:27-24:36

We hold on to things like our pride and our pettiness, our self-importance, or maybe even our negative self-abasement.

    24:37-24:47

We wanna hold on to all the stuff that we use to accessorize our lives so that we can let others know that we're blessed than they are.

    24:50-24:57

What we really need, beloved, is a gag reflex, a spiritual gag reflex.

    24:58-24:59

You know what I'm talking about.

    24:59-25:07

If you ever had to clean up somebody else's fluids, it's all you can do to keep everything down.

    25:09-25:16

We look at our world that way, "Oh, that's revolting." Do you have that response?

    25:17-25:18

    They're coming for our children.

    25:20-25:20

    Oh, that's revolting.

    25:22-25:27

Yeah, we need to be revolted by the world and recognize the crap for what it is.

    25:28-25:34

We need to purge it and count everything as loss for the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, our Lord.

    25:36-25:40

See, how we think about the world reveals a great deal about our maturity.

    25:41-25:42

    What are you focused on?

    25:42-25:44

What occupies your heart and your thoughts and your time?

    25:46-25:49

You might ask me, "Well, what should I be focused on?

    25:49-25:59

What should I be occupied with and doing?" If you're expecting a laundry list of do's and don'ts right now, I'm sorry you're going to be disappointed.

    26:00-26:05

You know, Satan likes that kind of Christianity, you know, lists of rules, things to do and not do.

    26:07-26:11

But we all know that's a graceless, legalistic set of rules.

    26:13-26:14

    founded on worldly pride.

    26:16-26:18

Man-made rules have no power to save.

    26:18-26:26

And me telling you what kind of car you should or shouldn't drive, or what kind of house you should own, isn't going to make you holy.

    26:28-26:38

Nor am I going to tell you what movies you should or shouldn't watch, or TV shows that are acceptable, or what social media you can use, what you should drink or not drink, how to spend your money.

    26:39-26:39

    No.

    26:41-26:43

Such things will do you no good in the long run or the short run.

    26:45-26:51

And really, over the past year, we've seen how man-made rules play out, haven't we?

    26:51-26:54

They spiral out of control until they become completely nonsensical.

    26:55-26:57

They take on a legalistic virtue signaling.

    27:00-27:03

When has that kind of legalism ever worked out for the church?

    27:06-27:19

My Aunt Jen, who was a Sunday school teacher and a good Pentecostal church woman, she used to tell me, "Richie, good Christian boys "don't do those kinds of things.

    27:21-27:28

"Richie, good Christian boys don't go to movie theaters." And I have the heart to tell her that I was only one of those three things.

    27:33-27:34

But there's that kind of rule.

    27:37-27:46

What good is that rule? It doesn't get behind what's going on, such as, "Well, who am I giving my money to?

    27:47-27:54

What kind of ideas are being purveyed by these movies? What are people doing with the money that I'm giving them?

    27:55-28:26

What's their worldview and what are they promoting?" That's what we've got to get at. That's what we've got to be discerning about and think about. So my Aunt Jen, she wouldn't go to movie theaters and watch movies, but she would watch them on TV at home. Kind of proves my point, right? So no, cultural rules have no power at all to save or sanctify you. By following them you might look like somebody's idea of an obedient Christian in a particular culture.

    28:30-28:32

You but your heart won't be transformed.

    28:34-28:37

To be transformed in your thinking, you have work to do every day.

    28:38-28:52

If you're Jesus' disciple, you've got to work out your salvation by examining what you treasure, what you crave, what you long for, and you have to ask yourself how your stuff, your activities, your cherished thoughts and ideas square with Jesus.

    28:54-29:02

A good starting point is assuming that everything about us and our values is wrong.

    29:04-29:07

It's of the world, it's of Satan, and it's crap.

    29:08-29:13

I realize that this is kind of a flat out, scorched earth approach to life.

    29:15-29:17

But you know, it makes things pretty simple.

    29:20-29:22

And it's not an approach that happens overnight.

    29:22-29:24

It doesn't happen in a month or a year.

    29:25-29:26

    It takes a lifetime.

    29:28-29:35

It's a process of shucking off the world and striving to take hold of Jesus for a lifetime.

    29:37-29:39

Now you may want to know, what does this process look like practically?

    29:43-29:46

Well, life in Christ isn't about just selling all your stuff and becoming a minimalist.

    29:47-29:48

It's not about becoming an ascetic.

    29:49-29:57

I'm not advocating that we all become like the Amish and we're living in some anachronistic world, right?

    29:58-30:00

We don't want to create a culture frozen in time.

    30:02-30:05

And as I said, it's certainly not about learning and following a set of rules.

    30:07-30:19

It's rather seeing and evaluating the world with baptized eyes and realizing our lives were and in some ways may still be full of crap of the world.

    30:20-30:23

And we gotta ask ourselves, why do I still value this?

    30:25-30:28

The Corinthian church faced the same challenge.

    30:28-30:38

On the one hand, they'd been set free in Christ, yet they were dogged by problems that arose out of their pagan worldview that was still so much a part of them.

    30:40-31:03

They mixed everything together from their old lives with their new lives in Christ, and they justified it by saying, "All things are lawful for me." Well, Paul countered that by saying, "You need to think this way." He said, "Yes, all things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.

    31:05-31:06

All things are lawful for me.

    31:07-31:16

I will not be dominated by anything." And again in chapter 10, "All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful.

    31:18-31:21

Some things are lawful, but not all things build up.

    31:24-31:25

    So that's the process.

    31:27-31:37

It's a process of weighing your motives, your attitudes, your behaviors, your possessions, and evaluating everything in the light of Christ.

    31:38-31:40

Something might be lawful, but is it really helpful?

    31:42-31:44

Does it control or dominate me?

    31:45-31:46

Or can I just walk away from it?

    31:46-31:55

Don't need that anymore. Is what I'm doing please God? Is it motivated by pride? Or is it motivated by humility?

    31:58-32:04

I mean earlier you probably thought it was being a killjoy. Oh he wants us to get rid of everything we do, we can't have fun.

    32:05-32:25

No! Oh as you go through this process of discerning and evaluating and shaking off the world, shaking off everything that so easily entangles, you discern God's true gifts. You find real joy. You walk in real freedom.

    32:29-32:41

As I said, this process takes a lifetime, but don't think for that reason you can put it off till later. "I've got time." No, you don't. With the help of the Holy Spirit and In the light of the word, get after it.

    32:42-32:46

We have work to do every day to develop right thinking.

    32:48-32:53

And I understand not everyone will agree with my scorched earth approach, and that's okay.

    32:54-33:03

Paul anticipated the same objection when he said in the rest of verse 15, if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you.

    33:04-33:24

And he went on, only let us live up what we have already attained. Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do." Paul turns here to the careful imitation of our outline.

    33:26-33:39

It sounds kind of confusing. On the one hand, he says, "I haven't attained my goal." But on the other, he says, "Let us live up to what we've attained." Well, what is it? What exactly have we all attained?

    33:42-34:04

Why? Forgiveness of sins and God's unlimited mercy, abounding grace and steadfast love that endures forever. We've been adopted and united with Christ and in Him we sit at the right hand of God the Father. We've been raised with Christ and transferred to his kingdom of light.

    34:05-34:10

Beloved, we've attained to everything and now we need to grow up into it.

    34:13-34:14

    How do we do that?

    34:16-34:20

I mentioned earlier that it takes concerted striving to grow up in Christ.

    34:21-34:29

We live up to what we've attained by studying the word, by doing it, such as pouring out forgiveness.

    34:33-34:36

Pouring out mercy and grace and love for others.

    34:38-34:41

And yes, to be in the process of shunning the world.

    34:42-34:45

In short, to think and act like Jesus.

    34:46-34:51

You know, we've had multiple excellent sermons about knowing Jesus and imitating Him.

    34:53-34:59

So I'd recommend you review your notes and re-watch these messages listed here.

    35:00-35:01

Go back and take a look.

    35:04-35:06

Paul also says to be a copycat.

    35:07-35:09

Look for and keep your eyes on mature believers.

    35:10-35:12

    Get their advice, their guidance.

    35:12-35:13

    Imitate them.

    35:14-35:18

We have plenty of mature believers here at Harvest.

    35:18-35:22

So find a mentor and ask for their help in prayers.

    35:24-35:26

    Study them, imitate them.

    35:29-35:33

All right, so we've seen growing up involves exertion, right thinking, careful imitation.

    35:34-35:38

Finally, growing up involves glorious transformation.

    35:40-35:45

We've already seen the goal of pursuing maturity is knowing Christ more than anything else.

    35:47-35:52

But you know, Paul doesn't want to wait until he's dead to know Christ.

    35:53-35:56

No, he wants to know Him right now, right now.

    35:59-36:02

But he concludes this passage by pointing out why maturity matters.

    36:05-36:06

Look what he says in verse 18.

    36:08-36:14

For as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.

    36:15-36:16

    Their destiny is destruction.

    36:17-36:20

Their God is their stomach, their glory is in their shame.

    36:21-36:23

Their mind is set on earthly things.

    36:25-36:40

But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await a savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

    36:42-36:43

    There's a sharp contrast here.

    36:44-36:50

We might think that those who are living enemies of the cross of Christ are unbelievers.

    36:52-36:55

It's more likely Paul is referring to people in the church.

    36:56-36:59

Why else would his warning come with tears?

    37:02-37:07

You see, these folks live as enemies of the cross because they're immersed in worldly, earthly things.

    37:07-37:10

They love the world and all its crap.

    37:10-37:14

They exult in their shame and in pursuing temporary pleasures.

    37:16-37:18

and therefore their destiny is destruction.

    37:20-37:23

And here, beloved, is why maturity matters.

    37:25-37:28

When persecution comes, what will you do?

    37:31-37:42

You're probably going like, "What? Persecution? What does this have to do with this message?" Well, remember where Paul is when he's writing this letter. He's in prison.

    37:44-37:48

The church in Philippi was founded out of persecution.

    37:49-37:51

Remember, he was locked in prison.

    37:52-37:54

He was in the stocks with Silas.

    37:57-38:06

And yet, the whole letter to the Philippians speaks of joy and thanksgiving and contentment.

    38:10-38:18

In the light of persecution, Paul lives no differently for Christ.

    38:19-38:30

Whether he's out walking free and preaching the gospel, or whether he's in prison, the gospel isn't chained. And my chains have resulted in glory to God.

    38:32-38:34

He's already suffered the loss of all things.

    38:36-38:40

He has nothing left to lose. Nothing can be taken away from him.

    38:41-38:46

He doesn't care if he's being persecuted. To live is Christ, to die is gain.

    38:50-38:50

    Write that down.

    38:51-38:55

Write that down in your notes. What will I do when persecution comes?

    38:57-39:00

Those who are living as enemies of the cross will simply compromise.

    39:01-39:06

It won't be difficult for them to do because they're already living there.

    39:07-39:23

They won't count the cost, or they will count the cost and decide, "Hey, preserving my lives, preserving my reputation, preserving my creature comforts are of greater value than following Jesus." They will be unwilling to count all things as lost.

    39:26-39:27

    But what about me?

    39:27-39:33

When persecution comes, will I compromise to save my stuff, my reputation, and maybe even save my skin?

    39:35-39:36

You know they're burning churches in Canada?

    39:38-39:38

    Canada!

    39:41-39:44

Will I be numbered with those whose destiny is destruction?

    39:45-39:48

Or will I gladly suffer the loss of all things for the cross of Christ?

    39:50-39:54

You will if you're striving to be mature.

    39:57-40:01

As he said, Paul did not care that he lost all things because of what he had gained.

    40:02-40:03

I know Jesus, I'm becoming like Jesus.

    40:04-40:10

I'm obtaining a citizenship in heaven, where one day I will see Jesus face to face.

    40:12-40:14

Beloved, these precious promises are for us as well.

    40:15-40:22

We are citizens of heaven, and Jesus is going to return for us and transform us into his glorious likeness.

    40:24-40:31

In Philippians 4, verse one, Paul concludes his exhortation to press on to maturity.

    40:32-40:37

And in keeping with his athletic imagery, he brings us to the top of the victor's podium.

    40:38-40:39

    Look what he says.

    40:39-40:54

He says, "Therefore my brothers and sisters, "you whom I love and long for, "my joy and my crown, "stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends." Beloved, we will stand firm by doing these things.

    40:54-40:58

We will not be caught up in the world or live in fear of anything.

    40:59-41:06

Instead, as citizens of heaven, we will press on to maturity in Christ and the prize of knowing him and being like him forever.

    41:09-41:24

Paul used similar imagery in his letter to the Ephesians where he urged them to attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

    41:25-41:29

And he prayed for them that they may be filled with all the fullness of God.

    41:31-41:32

    Beloved, make that your goal.

    41:35-41:44

We have thoroughly examined Paul's example of counting all things as loss, of strenuously forgetting what is behind and straining for what is ahead.

    41:46-41:51

Glorious transformation into the fullness of Christ, into all the fullness of God.

    41:53-41:54

    There is nothing better.

    41:55-41:58

There is no more worthy way to live your life.

    41:59-42:03

So why don't you grow up and become just like your Father?

    42:04-42:05

    Let's pray.

    42:07-42:26

Oh, glorious Father, our great God, You who have loved us and saved us through our Lord Jesus Christ, help us by Your Holy Spirit to grow up in Him, to be imitators of Him in all we think and do and say.

    42:29-42:38

Help us, Father, to be daily busy at this work, at this task.

    42:40-42:41

There is nothing better for us to do.

    42:43-42:45

    We are confident of this.

    42:46-42:55

You will help us and transform us until that great day when we see our Lord Jesus face to face.

    42:57-42:58

In His name we pray, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Philippians 3:12-4:1

  1. What is one thing that God revealed to you personally during the sermon?

  2. Do you pursue Jesus as zealously as you once pursued sin? Why is it difficult for us to do that?

  3. What comes to mind when you think of maturity? What do you think of Jesus’s perspective on maturity (Matthew 19:22)?

  4. It was said during the message that a good starting point for evaluating what we value is that “everything is crap” and “everything about us and our values is wrong.” What do you think about those statements?

  5. What does the process of sorting through your values look like for you? (1 Corinthians 6:12 and 10:23)?

  • 00:35-00:56

Open up your Bibles with me please. We're going to be in Philippians today, chapter 3. The title of today's message is "Christ Enough." Have you found Jesus Christ to be enough.

    00:58-01:12

Now while you're turning there, I don't mean to brag, but we got our podcast analytics in, you know, the number of downloads of sermons.

    01:14-01:22

Like I said, I don't wanna sound like I'm bragging, but I was the third most downloaded speaker in 2017.

    01:23-01:35

And Andrew Rupe said, "Oh, you mean like Olive Harvest?" "No, this church." I was the third most downloaded speaker at this church.

    01:37-01:41

I was really fishing for applause instead of laughter, but...

    01:43-01:53

"No, no, no, no, no, no, don't you dare, that ship has sailed." Number one was Jeremiah Canfield, he's the pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh East.

    01:53-01:55

I bring that punk in for one guest spot.

    01:56-01:58

And he had the most downloaded sermons.

    01:58-02:02

Number two is Mark Ortt, actually.

    02:03-02:04

How could you treat a brother like that, Mark?

    02:06-02:15

Number two, and actually in my bragging, I guess I sort of exaggerated a little bit because I wasn't actually third place.

    02:15-02:19

I was actually tied for third place with Alex Gianetti.

    02:20-02:20

    (audience laughing)

    02:25-02:26

    Go bronze!

    02:30-02:40

It was a bit of a humbling moment for me when Ben Murphy sent me the analytics and I realized that I'm not even the most popular speaker at my own church.

    02:42-02:49

But it was a gentle reminder for me of the struggle that we all face from time to time.

    02:50-02:53

True or false, we all want to feel significant don't we?

    02:54-02:54

    True or false?

    02:56-02:57

We all want to feel important right?

    02:58-03:00

That's our word today, I want to talk about significance.

    03:00-03:12

As we ask, "Is Christ enough?" What we're talking about is, "Is Christ enough for me, for my sense of personal significance?" We all want to feel like we matter.

    03:14-03:15

We all want to feel like we have a purpose.

    03:17-03:18

    I mean something.

    03:18-03:21

I make a difference. We all want that, right?

    03:21-03:22

    We all want that.

    03:23-03:28

And listen, there is nothing wrong with wanting that.

    03:28-03:37

In fact, you were made, you were created to want, to feel significant.

    03:38-03:41

    God created that in you.

    03:42-03:50

The problem is, we look for significance, We look for satisfaction, we look for fulfillment in the wrong places.

    03:50-03:51

    That's the problem.

    03:52-03:56

You see, God designed you to find your worth in Him.

    03:58-04:03

Specifically, in who Jesus Christ is, and what Jesus Christ has done for you.

    04:03-04:04

    Is Christ enough?

    04:06-04:20

And as Dan spoke last week, from the Garden of Eden, Eve was basically told, "God isn't enough. You can have more.

    04:22-04:36

You can have significance apart from God. Think about that." Here's Eve, literally the only woman on the planet, possessor of everything, and the enemy comes alongside and says, "You can have more.

    04:37-04:50

This isn't enough. You can have more." That sin tendency, that wanting more than God, it becomes the experience of us all.

    04:50-04:52

You can trace this through Scripture, right?

    04:52-04:54

    Remember Jesus in John 4?

    04:54-05:01

He sat down with that woman at the well, and He pointed out to her the thing that she was looking for significance in.

    05:01-05:03

What was it? It was in men.

    05:03-05:06

She was on man number six, and Jesus pointed that out.

    05:06-05:07

    You're looking for fulfillment there.

    05:09-05:11

And he pointed out their fulfillment is found in him.

    05:13-05:15

In drinking from the water that he gives.

    05:17-05:22

Jesus told the story in Luke 15, the prodigal son, he had everything and it wasn't enough.

    05:24-05:27

Fast forward to today, it still happens, right?

    05:28-05:31

    People have midlife crisis.

    05:32-05:36

I've got to do something, I've got to have something to make me feel significant.

    05:38-05:39

    You have people having affairs.

    05:39-05:46

"My spouse isn't making me feel significant." But this other person is.

    05:48-05:50

And that's where affairs come from.

    05:52-06:02

Church, the reason I'm sharing this with you is we, even as a church, we can be guilty of looking for significance, personal fulfillment, personal satisfaction.

    06:03-06:06

We can be guilty of looking for these things apart from Jesus Christ.

    06:08-06:13

We can be guilty of looking for fulfillment in worldly things.

    06:13-06:25

And Jesus Christ says, "All who are thirsty, come to Me." And somehow people who claim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are still thirsty for more of something else.

    06:27-06:28

    That certainly isn't Jesus' fault.

    06:31-06:43

Because you could say in a sense that we are standing in the Garden of Eden alongside Eve and if we are honest a lot of times we are saying, "Yeah, I need more than God's offered me.

    06:44-06:49

I haven't found God to be enough." Is Christ enough for you?

    06:51-06:53

The question is how can I let Jesus be enough?

    06:53-07:05

I hear what you are saying Pastor Jeff, but I've struggled with this and I know I should to be content in who I am in Christ, and I leave here and I just feel like I want more than that.

    07:05-07:11

So how can I get to the place where Jesus Christ is my satisfaction?

    07:12-07:16

I feel the significance in Him.

    07:17-07:20

That's where we're going today on your outline, the path to significance.

    07:20-07:26

Here's three questions to answer, to find your answer in Jesus Christ.

    07:28-07:33

These three questions that we're looking at today will determine what you think gives you significance.

    07:34-07:35

    There's the three questions.

    07:35-07:37

The first one is what's important to me?

    07:37-07:38

    Ask yourself that.

    07:38-07:39

    What is important to me?

    07:40-07:43

What is the thing in my life that I value more than anything?

    07:44-07:51

You find how you answer that question, you'll find where you place your significance, what you're looking for for significance, right?

    07:52-07:53

The second question is who am I?

    07:54-07:54

    What's your identity?

    07:56-07:59

You find how you answer that, you find what your significance is based on.

    08:01-08:02

The third question is what's my purpose?

    08:03-08:04

    What's your goal in life?

    08:06-08:09

Here's my ambition, this is what I'm striving for in life.

    08:09-08:16

You identify that goal, you identify that in which you find your significance.

    08:18-08:21

So here's the first question I want you to ask yourself, what's important to me?

    08:23-08:28

The answer biblically, to find your significance in Christ, The answer, what's important to me?

    08:28-08:30

    Jot this down, knowing Christ.

    08:31-08:38

You have to get to this place where the most important thing in your life is knowing Jesus Christ.

    08:38-08:40

    You have to get there.

    08:42-08:43

    What is it for you?

    08:43-08:44

    What is valuable to you?

    08:44-08:45

    What is important to you?

    08:45-08:51

In our drive to feel significant, we tend to define ourselves by past achievements.

    08:53-08:54

    We all do it.

    08:54-08:57

We want to define ourselves by the things that we've done.

    08:57-08:58

Well, I went to school here.

    08:58-09:00

    I used to work here.

    09:00-09:01

    I did these things.

    09:01-09:03

    I accomplished these things.

    09:04-09:06

    Look at Philippians 3.4.

    09:06-09:14

Paul was giving his list of the things that he could have boasted about, put his confidence in.

    09:14-09:22

Philippians 3.4, he says, "Though I myself have reason for confidence "in the flesh also." If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.

    09:23-09:50

I was like, "Check this out. You want to brag? I got some things I can brag about." "Circumcised on the eighth day of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as to the law, a Pharisee, as to zeal, a persecutor of the church, as to righteousness under the law, blameless." His heritage, his education, his training, his being good.

    09:52-09:55

Now that resume might not fire you up, but you have to understand something.

    09:55-10:05

To the first century Jew who would have been hearing this, they would have been like, "Dude, that is a five-star resume right there." You don't get more Jewish than Paul. I mean, you just don't.

    10:05-10:24

I mean, look at this resume. Paul's like, "I'm like extra Jewish." And that was something, again, if you can sort of think of it in terms of America, you know, we wave the flag and we sing that Lee Greenwood song, I'm proud to be an American and that's never going to end up in our worship set, by the way.

    10:24-10:29

But that sense of patriotism, I mean, the Jews had that times a thousand.

    10:30-10:31

    I'm proud of my heritage.

    10:31-10:44

And Paul says, "Yeah, I have some things that I can be proud of concerning my heritage." But I want you to see on how Paul reflects on everything that he's accomplished.

    10:46-10:47

Look at verses 7 through 8.

    10:49-10:52

Paul with his five-star resume, awesome track record.

    10:52-10:53

Look at what he says in verse 7.

    10:54-11:15

"But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ." Indeed, I count everything as loss because, look at this, of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

    11:17-11:33

For His sake, I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ." Stop there.

    11:35-11:43

Paul, reflecting on every single thing he's accomplished, He says, "You know, when I look at my resume, do you know what I see?

    11:44-11:54

My Bible translates it 'rubbish'." And I'm going to be honest with you, the word "rubbish" is sort of the translator's attempt at being tactful.

    11:55-11:56

You know, who uses the word "rubbish"?

    11:57-11:58

Does anybody here use that word? Anybody?

    11:59-12:02

    Anybody? Show of hands, anybody?

    12:02-12:06

Nobody in this church uses the word "rubbish"?

    12:06-12:07

    True, nobody uses that word.

    12:07-12:12

When I hear the word rubbish, I think of some British butler.

    12:13-12:17

"I'm going to dispose of your rubbish!" Who uses that word?

    12:17-12:29

Well, that's sort of the sugarcoating what the word actually is, because if you look in the Greek, the word can literally be translated "manure".

    12:30-12:37

And I think even the commentaries that I was reading this week that translated "manure", I think they were trying to soften the blow a little bit too.

    12:37-12:50

and I'm not trying to be crass for the sake of being crass, but what Paul is saying is, "Look, I have this impeccable resume, but compared to knowing Christ, it's crap." That's what he's saying.

    12:52-12:55

I know we don't like to use that word in church, and some of you are looking at me like I shouldn't have.

    12:57-13:16

I don't think Paul wrote this, "My resume is rubbish!" He says, "Everything that I used to value, everything that I clung to to make myself feel so important, to make myself feel so significant, He said it's nothing but..." What?

    13:18-13:19

    Oh, you said it too.

    13:21-13:21

    That's what He said.

    13:23-13:30

Do you want to experience the fulfillment, the significance that Jesus Christ offers?

    13:30-13:32

Here's the first step, you've got to do this first.

    13:32-13:34

    ditch your resume.

    13:36-13:49

All the things that you're like, here's the reason that I'm so awesome, here's all the awesome things I did, here's all the awesome things about me, you need to take that resume and crumple it up and throw it in the garbage.

    13:50-13:53

You say, well how can I ditch everything in my life that gives me meaning?

    13:54-13:55

    It's easy.

    13:57-13:57

    It's easy.

    13:58-14:04

Take your resume, you take all of those things, and you put them next to knowing Jesus.

    14:06-14:08

And all of a sudden this doesn't look so great.

    14:10-14:12

What's your resume next to knowing Jesus?

    14:14-14:21

Have you ever known somebody that has to top every story that is told?

    14:22-14:30

You know what I'm talking about the guy that no matter what anybody says, he's got a story that his was just a lot better.

    14:30-14:31

    You know anybody like that?

    14:31-14:32

I used to work with this guy.

    14:33-14:35

It didn't matter what you said.

    14:35-14:38

His experience made yours look so lame.

    14:39-14:41

You can have a casual conversation with the guy.

    14:41-14:45

He'd be like, "Oh, I'm tired today." He'd say, "Oh, you think you're tired?

    14:48-14:52

"I haven't slept since October." And what do you say?

    14:52-14:56

You're just, "Oh, okay, you win." What do you say there?

    14:58-15:01

So you just, I would learn to try to ignore that.

    15:03-15:06

And I'd be like, well, I guess the reason I'm tired is because I've been working a lot.

    15:06-15:07

Oh, you think you've been working a lot?

    15:09-15:11

I logged 200 hours last week.

    15:13-15:15

I'm like, do you even math?

    15:17-15:23

And I'm like, well, the reason I've had to work, the reason I've had to work so much and get so many hours is I'm just, I'm really strapped for cash.

    15:23-15:24

    Oh, you think you're broke?

    15:27-15:27

    Let me guess.

    15:29-15:30

    You're a broker.

    15:34-15:41

Well, knowing Jesus, in the positive sense, knowing Jesus, that's the ultimate story topper, isn't it?

    15:42-15:53

Somebody can come to you and say, "Hey, I have a huge house." You can say, "Jesus Christ is building me a house right now." Right?

    15:54-16:02

Or somebody comes to you and says, "I went to Harvard." You say, you know, the one who possesses all wisdom in the universe lives inside of me.

    16:04-16:07

Or somebody says to you, and this is the most disgusting to me.

    16:08-16:10

Somebody says to you, I ran nine miles today.

    16:12-16:14

Almost like, what'd you do, huh?

    16:15-16:15

    Puffing her chest out.

    16:15-16:16

    What'd you do?

    16:16-16:17

    I ran nine miles today.

    16:18-16:23

I say, yeah, Jesus is going to give me an eternal and indestructible body.

    16:25-16:26

    You'll see me run then.

    16:27-16:28

    (audience laughing)

    16:30-16:43

And not until, or somebody says, "Do you know who my father is?" I'm like, "Do you know who my father is?" The surpassing worth of knowing Christ.

    16:43-16:46

Ditch your resume, that's what Paul did.

    16:46-16:53

Everything I thought made me so awesome next to Jesus, it's a pile of rubbish.

    16:56-16:59

Because the reality is you can't be full of God if you're full of yourself, right?

    17:00-17:02

You can't be full of God if you're full of yourself.

    17:04-17:04

    Ditch your resume.

    17:07-17:12

Jesus Christ is, He's still the treasure that's hidden in the field.

    17:13-17:18

That when discovered, you find He's more valuable than anything you know.

    17:19-17:21

And He's still the pearl of great price, right?

    17:21-17:25

Matthew 13, that when discovered, He's more valuable than anything you've ever seen.

    17:26-17:27

    Ditch your resume.

    17:29-17:30

Second question is, who am I?

    17:32-17:34

    You want to find significance?

    17:34-17:38

You want to be able to say, Jesus Christ is enough for me, who am I?

    17:40-17:44

You have to get to the place where your identity is, I am righteous in Christ.

    17:44-17:46

Jot that down, righteous in Christ.

    17:48-17:57

Your idea of self-worth Your idea of significance has always wrapped up in your identity.

    17:59-18:05

And you know what your identity is when somebody says to you, oh, hello, Matt, who are you?

    18:06-18:08

And the thing you want to answer with, this is who I am.

    18:11-18:12

    That's your identity.

    18:12-18:14

The thing you want to talk about yourself, that's your identity.

    18:17-18:19

For a lot of people, honestly, it's their job, right?

    18:20-18:21

    Like, who are you?

    18:21-18:32

    "I'm pastor, I'm drummer, I'm accountant, I'm physical therapist, I'm designer, I'm mechanic." That's their identity.

    18:33-18:36

For some people, their identity is another human, like we said, the woman at the well.

    18:37-18:40

Some people, they find their identity so wrapped up in another person.

    18:43-18:48

For somebody else, they find their identity, they find their identity in their struggles.

    18:51-18:52

Some people want that to be their identity.

    18:52-18:56

I want people to know me as this person that has these struggles.

    18:58-19:00

You know, tell me a little bit about yourself.

    19:00-19:03

Like, well, I was bullied when I was in kindergarten.

    19:04-19:06

    Like, you're 60 now.

    19:06-19:09

Has nothing of significance happened in the last 55 years of your life?

    19:11-19:17

Some people, again, this is a sore spot for me, so I'm working through some things too, okay?

    19:17-19:23

But some people, their identity is their physical appearance for their health, like those nine mile runner people.

    19:24-19:25

    For some people, that's it.

    19:26-19:28

    Check out my six pack.

    19:30-19:35

Check out this kale and arugula salad shake that I drank for breakfast.

    19:38-19:39

    Look, I'm having fun here.

    19:39-19:41

There's nothing wrong with any of those things, right?

    19:41-19:43

There's nothing wrong with having a job.

    19:43-19:46

There's nothing wrong with having a person in your life.

    19:48-19:50

There's nothing wrong with dealing with struggles.

    19:50-19:54

There's nothing wrong with being a health conscious person.

    19:54-19:56

There's nothing wrong with any of those things.

    19:57-20:02

But you cannot let those things become your identity.

    20:04-20:05

You can't let them become your identity.

    20:07-20:08

    Like, well, why not?

    20:08-20:09

    I'll tell you why not.

    20:09-20:13

If your identity is your job, I have some bad news for you.

    20:14-20:15

    You could lose that job.

    20:17-20:25

Do you know how many people are crushed because their job becomes their identity and then they get laid off or whatever and they're just like lost.

    20:25-20:25

    Like, what do I do?

    20:26-20:26

    I don't know who I am.

    20:27-20:29

My whole life has been defined by this job.

    20:29-20:31

You can't let that job define you.

    20:32-20:37

If your identity is another human being, that's bad news because people come and go.

    20:39-20:45

Even your children, if your identity is being a parent, kids grow up and move out.

    20:47-20:50

You can't let your identity be in another human being.

    20:50-20:55

If your identity is your struggles, I got some bad news for you, things might get better.

    20:56-20:57

    Wait.

    20:58-21:01

Yeah, I got some bad news for you, things might get better.

    21:01-21:02

That is what my notes said.

    21:04-21:14

If your identity is being wrapped up in the physical health conscious thing, I got some bad news for you, gravity always wins.

    21:17-21:22

No matter what kind of surgery or supplements or spa you're using, you're getting old.

    21:24-21:28

So much of our identity is wrapped up in these things, but look at the text, verse nine.

    21:30-21:37

Paul says he wants to gain Christ, end of verse eight, look at this, and be found in him.

    21:40-21:42

    Paul, what's your identity, Paul?

    21:43-21:46

You gave your resume, what's the thing you wanna be known as, known for?

    21:47-21:48

What is it that gives you significance?

    21:49-21:50

It's in three words right there.

    21:51-21:55

"Found in Him." I want to be found in Jesus Christ.

    21:57-21:59

    He clarifies a little further.

    22:00-22:12

He says, "Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ." The righteousness from God that depends on faith.

    22:14-22:33

that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death, that by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection from the dead." Found in Him. That's your identity.

    22:34-22:39

Christ is in me, and I am in Christ.

    22:39-22:40

    Is Christ enough for you?

    22:41-22:43

The reality is nothing else matters.

    22:45-22:54

Paul says, "I don't have a righteousness of my own." We have a righteousness that comes by faith in Christ.

    22:55-23:01

I've shared with you before, that's the most mind-blowing thing about the Bible to me by far.

    23:01-23:12

More than anything, I don't really struggle at all with creation, election, the Trinity, Sovereignty of God, free will, I don't struggle with those things at all.

    23:14-23:24

The thing in the Bible that blows my mind more than anything is that through Jesus Christ, God makes me righteous.

    23:27-23:30

God pronounces me as righteous as Himself.

    23:32-23:36

Not because of anything that I've done, that's why He says it's not a righteousness from the law.

    23:36-23:40

It's not like I've been a good boy and God says, "Jeff, you're a good boy." I'm not.

    23:42-23:55

But when you believe in Jesus Christ, when you receive Christ as your Lord and Savior, when you receive him, God pronounces you totally righteous, perfect, as righteous as himself.

    23:57-24:01

Can you think of an identity that you could embrace that would be greater than that?

    24:04-24:04

    So who am I?

    24:06-24:09

Embrace the identity that God gives you.

    24:10-24:13

Because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the world thinks of me.

    24:14-24:17

It doesn't matter what I sometimes may think of myself.

    24:19-24:23

I embrace the surpassing worth of Christ because of how He has changed.

    24:25-24:38

Paul says, "I just want to know Him. I want to be found in Him, and I want to know Him." That's why your journey with Christ and your journey for significance doesn't end with getting saved.

    24:38-24:41

    It goes beyond that.

    24:41-24:43

Number three, what's my purpose in life?

    24:44-24:46

    What's my purpose in life?

    24:48-24:49

Here it is, becoming like Christ.

    24:50-24:51

    Is Christ enough?

    24:52-24:57

Well, examine in your life what your purpose is, what's your goal, what's your life's ambition.

    25:00-25:05

And if it's anything other than becoming like Jesus Christ, you're going to feel empty.

    25:06-25:07

    You just are.

    25:10-25:15

Striving for some golden ring that looks kind of plastic when you finally get it.

    25:17-25:21

Compared to becoming like Christ. Look at verses 12-14.

    25:22-25:28

Paul says, "Not that I've already obtained this, or I'm already perfect." He's talking about Christ like this.

    25:28-25:29

    He goes, "I'm not perfect.

    25:30-25:37

"I haven't obtained this perfection, "this spiritual elite perfect status.

    25:39-25:43

"I'm not exactly like Christ in every way yet." That's what he's talking about.

    25:43-25:55

"Not that I've already obtained this "or I'm already perfect, "but I press on to make it my own "because Christ Jesus has made me his own." Reemphasizes it, verse 13.

    25:55-26:17

He says, "Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own, but one thing I do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Stop there for a second.

    26:18-26:20

Paul says, "I haven't obtained this.

    26:20-26:21

    I haven't obtained perfection.

    26:21-26:28

I haven't obtained perfect Christ-likeness, But I am pressing on, I'm straining forward after this.

    26:28-26:29

    Why?

    26:29-26:31

Paul says, I wanna achieve this.

    26:31-26:35

I wanna go after this with every cell in my body.

    26:36-26:37

    I'm going after Christlikeness.

    26:37-26:38

    Why?

    26:38-26:41

He says, because that's what Christ is after for me.

    26:41-26:42

    Do you see that?

    26:42-26:44

He says, Jesus has this goal for me.

    26:44-26:46

So that is my goal for me.

    26:47-26:48

And it's to be like him.

    26:48-26:51

It's to be conformed into his image, Romans 8.29.

    26:53-27:03

Paul uses running terminology in this passage, and you can tell that it's not casually go for a jog running terminology, right?

    27:04-27:15

This is running like a competitive athlete terminology, which is emphasizing the urgency and the passion in which we are to go after this.

    27:15-27:21

We leave the past behind us, and we move forward, And we never stop going after Christ.

    27:24-27:40

Years ago, a certain local school that I, and some of us may or may not have attended in high school, a certain school had this cross country team that came off of an undefeated season.

    27:42-27:48

I'm ignorant, I don't really know what that means, but they had an undefeated season the previous year.

    27:48-27:58

So they go to this school and they were interviewing some of the cross country athletes and they're like, you know, what's ahead for you in the next, you know, in the next cross country season?

    27:58-28:01

And I saved this quote because it just makes me giggle and giggle.

    28:03-28:04

And I hope it does you too.

    28:05-28:14

But this quote from one of the athletes, he said, I expect us...

    28:14-28:19

Keep in mind, they're coming off of a winning season, right? Undefeated.

    28:21-28:24

One of the athletes said this, "I expect us to be above 500.

    28:26-28:30

Cranberry is strong, and North Clarion is strong.

    28:31-28:40

I think it will be us and Monatah to battle for third place." Like, battle for third place?

    28:41-29:10

Is that the bar? Are we sending our Olympic athletes to Korea? Like, okay guys, bronze, just like me and Alex, bronze! Battle for third place? Talk about setting your sights low. Is that the athlete you want on your team? Okay guys, at least third. You know, what did that huddle look like before the cross-country meets? Okay everybody, bring Bring it in on three, mediocrity.

    29:10-29:11

    You ready?

    29:11-29:13

    One, two, three, mediocrity.

    29:13-29:14

All right, let's go be average.

    29:16-29:18

    Who battles for third place?

    29:19-29:24

But see, that's exactly the kind of passive indifference that Paul was teaching against here.

    29:25-29:30

He's like, I'm not just trotting in my Christian walk, like it's okay if I come in third.

    29:31-29:35

He's like, no, I'm going after this like I'm going after the gold.

    29:35-29:39

and I'm gonna keep going, and I'm gonna keep going, and I'm gonna keep going.

    29:39-29:41

And if I get knocked down, that's not gonna stop me.

    29:41-29:42

    I'm going for gold.

    29:44-29:48

That's the attitude that Paul is calling us to.

    29:50-29:52

Everyone has a goal for their life.

    29:54-29:58

Is the goal for your life the same goal that Jesus Christ has for your life?

    29:58-30:01

And that is to make you more like him.

    30:01-30:02

    Is Christ enough for you?

    30:04-30:11

And maybe you haven't felt the significance that Christ gives because you haven't been pursuing Him and His purposes for you.

    30:12-30:21

Maybe you just haven't felt this fulfillment in Christ because you're one of these okay to settle for third place trotting along type Christians.

    30:23-30:26

And Paul says, "No, I am straining forward.

    30:26-30:34

"I am pressing on." Early in 1 Corinthians, I don't box like somebody beating the air, right?

    30:35-30:36

So I'm going in for the knockout.

    30:39-30:46

This Christ likeness that he calls us to violently pursue, it's called sanctification.

    30:47-30:55

All right, that's growing and maturing in the Lord, the sanctification, and understand church, sanctification comes from God, it's like righteousness.

    30:55-30:58

You can't make yourself grow, okay?

    30:58-30:59

You can't say, "Oh, you know what?

    30:59-31:00

"I hear what you're saying, Pastor.

    31:00-31:08

"I'm really gonna make myself grow." You cannot make yourself grow, but it's like a plant.

    31:10-31:11

You can't make a plant grow, can you?

    31:12-31:13

You can't make a plant grow.

    31:15-31:23

You set a plant down and, "Oh, I really want this thing to grow "and I want it to get big and I'm going to send it," what's that stupid phrase?

    31:23-31:26

"I'm going to send it good thoughts." I hate when people say that.

    31:28-31:28

"Hey, I'm having a hard day.

    31:28-31:31

"Send good thoughts my way." No, send prayers to God.

    31:32-31:33

    Good thoughts.

    31:33-31:35

I'm gonna send good thoughts towards this plant, make it grow.

    31:35-31:37

Is that gonna make the plant grow?

    31:37-31:40

There's nothing you can do to make the plant grow.

    31:44-31:48

But you can put that plant in a position to maximize its potential to grow.

    31:49-31:50

And that's the same with your walk with Christ.

    31:50-31:52

    You can't make yourself grow.

    31:52-32:00

Sanctification, like justification, comes from God, but you can put yourself in a position to maximize your potential to grow in Christ.

    32:01-32:01

    How?

    32:03-32:04

Well, what does the Bible say?

    32:05-32:06

    Sanctification comes two ways.

    32:07-32:09

First of all, it comes by the word of God.

    32:09-32:15

John 17, 17, Jesus said, "Sanctify them in the truth, your word is truth." Sanctification comes from the word of God.

    32:16-32:20

And secondly, sanctification comes from God's Holy Spirit.

    32:20-32:30

Romans 15, 16, "Sanctified by the Holy Spirit." You can't make yourself grow, but you can put yourself in a better position where God can grow you.

    32:31-32:33

You want that plant to grow, what are you gonna do?

    32:33-32:38

You're gonna give it water, you're gonna give it sunlight, and you're gonna trust that the growth is going to happen.

    32:38-32:39

    Same with you.

    32:40-32:43

It's like, yeah, I really wanna grow in Christ, but I really don't read the Bible.

    32:43-32:47

Well, then you're not really gonna grow because that's how it comes.

    32:48-32:49

Sanctification by the word of God.

    32:49-32:51

Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the word of Christ.

    32:52-32:57

Like, yeah, I really wanna grow in Christ, but I really don't have much of a prayer life, then you're not gonna grow.

    32:58-33:03

I really don't seek the Holy Spirit's guidance in my day-to-day life, then you're not going to grow.

    33:05-33:12

So the question for you, church, and the question I have to reflect back on myself is how hard are you running after Christ right now?

    33:14-33:16

How is your prayer life right now?

    33:17-33:20

    Are you praying privately, secretly?

    33:21-33:23

Are you praying like you're going for a gold medal in prayer?

    33:25-33:27

Are you praying like you're battling for third?

    33:29-33:30

    How's your personal Bible study?

    33:31-33:34

Are you seeking God in His Word and reading His Word?

    33:37-33:38

Like you're going for the gold?

    33:40-33:42

Or like you're going to settle for the bronze?

    33:43-33:44

    Look at verse 15.

    33:46-33:48

He says, "Let those of us who are mature think this way.

    33:48-34:49

And if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you." Concerning growing in Christ like this, there's an immature attitude, there's a mature attitude. The immature attitude is making excuses for your sin. "I'm a lousy sinner. Why bother pursuing Christ if I'm never going to achieve perfection?" That's how some people look at a Christian life. "I'm not going to be perfect in this life. I'm just a lousy sinner and that's why I sin." And there's no striving. That's immature. Paul says this is the mature attitude right here. I know I will never be perfect in this life, but I'm going to grow and I'm going to become better and I'm never going to stop pursuing Christ. That's the mature attitude. Verse 16, I love this. He says, "Only let us hold true to what we have attained." Hold true. I love this because there's nothing new. "Okay, okay, Jeff, what's the secret?" There isn't one.

    34:49-34:59

He says, "Hold true to what you've attained." Keep doing the things you know that God is going to use to grow you to be more like Christ.

    35:01-35:08

And when you become more like Christ, you're going to be settled, you're going to be satisfied, you're going to feel the significance that only He gives.

    35:09-35:11

    There's no secret, no fad.

    35:12-35:13

Here it is, get alone with God.

    35:14-35:14

    Talk to Him.

    35:15-35:15

    Cry out to Him.

    35:16-35:20

Ask Him to let your heart embrace the glorious promises of His Word.

    35:21-35:22

    Get into a small group.

    35:23-35:27

Stay connected with people who pour into you and allow you to pour into them.

    35:28-35:31

You're like, "Man, you've been telling us that for years." Yeah, there's nothing new.

    35:32-35:33

    There's nothing new.

    35:33-35:34

Just hold true to what you've attained.

    35:35-35:35

    You know what to do.

    35:35-35:36

    Let's go after it.

    35:37-35:37

    Right?

    35:38-35:43

So maybe you're not standing next to Eve by the tree in the Garden of Eden.

    35:46-35:48

But in a sense this morning we are standing at the cross.

    35:49-35:52

And the same temptation is put before you.

    35:55-35:56

Do you need more than God is offering?

    35:59-36:00

    In order to feel important?

    36:00-36:01

    In order to feel satisfied?

    36:02-36:04

    In order to feel significant?

    36:06-36:07

    Or is Christ enough?

    36:09-36:20

When you find your answers in Christ to these questions, "What's really important to me?" What's really important?

    36:20-36:25

What's important to me is Jesus Christ, knowing Him.

    36:26-36:27

    Who am I?

    36:28-36:31

I was a lost person that's been found and saved.

    36:31-36:33

    I am found in Christ.

    36:34-36:35

    That's who I am.

    36:36-36:38

I am pronounced righteous in Christ.

    36:39-36:40

    What's my goal in life?

    36:41-36:50

My goal is to continue to pursue Christ like this, to grow in all of the ways God's Holy Spirit wants me to grow.

    36:52-36:56

When Christ is the answer to these questions, it doesn't matter who you are.

    36:57-36:58

It doesn't matter what you do.

    37:01-37:03

You're going to discover that Jesus Christ is enough.

    37:04-37:05

Can you bow your heads and pray with me, please?

    37:07-37:11

Father in heaven, we look at your Word today.

    37:12-37:15

I pray that your Holy Spirit would bring great conviction on all of us.

    37:17-37:27

Because our reality is, Father, we confess to you that we have sought to fulfill our appetites with junk food.

    37:28-37:46

Father, we've sought to to fill this hole in our hearts with all of these things that really don't mean anything, things that don't last, things that in the long run aren't going to make much of a difference.

    37:47-38:29

Father, I pray today that as we reflect on your Word and we reflect on our personal walk, Father, we'd stop being people that are content to just trot. Stop being people that are content content to take a leisurely stroll, but that we would be people who would press on, that our hearts hunger and desire and passion is to know Christ, to be found in Him, to gain Christ and to count everything else, everything else that we could hang our significance and sense of identity and fulfillment, let us count them as rubbish.

    38:31-38:34

Father, let us find our significance in Christ today.

    38:36-38:59

Father, by your Spirit, by the power of your Word, working within us, let each one of us today, leaving here more determined than ever, to say, "Christ is enough." Christ is enough.

    39:00-39:04

In His name we pray, Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Philippians 3

  1. Honesty time: for you, what would you naturally want to find your significance (sense of self-worth) in?
How does that compare with knowing Christ, according to Paul (Phil 3:8)?

  2. According to Phil 3:15 (and previous the 3 verses Phil 3:11-14), what is "mature thinking" regarding pursuing Christ-likeness? What specifically would be "immature thinking"?

  3. You can't make yourself grow, but you can do things to put yourself in a position to maximize your growth. What are the things you can do to help your growth?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another to be full of God, not full of ourselves.
