And I want to talk with you for a little bit about time.

Because this time of year, a lot of people are thinking about time.

Some of you are like, "No, not at all." But you like me and that you can look back in your life and realize that there were a lot of periods in your life Where you were looking ahead To the next chapter of life, you know what I mean by that?

Here's what I mean. Maybe you can relate to this but when I was 13, I Couldn't wait to be 16 right why because it's cool It's cool and you can drive right but then when I was 16 I couldn't wait until I was 18.

Why? Because I got out of high school and now I'm an adult.

And when I was 18, I couldn't wait to be 21.

Right. And then when I was 21, I couldn't wait to graduate college.

And when I graduated college, I couldn't wait to get married.

And then when I got married, I couldn't wait to have a baby.

And now that our kids are five and six, I remember when they were babies, I couldn't wait until they could walk.

And then I couldn't wait until they were out of diapers.

And some people, not us, but some people couldn't wait until their kids are old enough to go to school and get out of the house for a little bit.

And then can't wait until the kids are old enough to graduate high school and go to college and really get out of the house.

and you have any like just look back and see you know I spent a lot of time looking forward to what's next but then what happens what happens then you know I'm 36 now and you know how old I wish I was 13 things were really easy at 13 because I didn't have to drive because I didn't have kids to look after you know a wife to take care of, a house to take care of it was a lot easier when I was 13. Wasn't life easier at 13?

Well, we have a way of looking forward to that next chapter of life and I would say also with the church I think we would have a tendency in that, even with launching this, right?

'Cause I remember, you know, how long ago was it, Dale, that it was like the Lippins and the Millers, like, yeah, we're gonna plant Harvest Bible Chapel, and then we saw some more families come along, and we were in core group building phase, and then we couldn't wait to get to launch team phase, and then we're in launch team phase.

Couldn't wait to launch the church, and you know, be out of the living rooms, or be out of the Persick's house, or be out of the chiropractic office, and to be meeting in the school, and even now I have people say, well, what do we get in our own building?

And we can do that as a church to say, well, let's just look ahead, and what's the next thing?

We can't wait to see what's next, what's next?

And I guarantee you, there's gonna come a day that some people are going to say, you know what?

I liked church a lot better when it was just meeting at the chiropractic office.

But we have a way of wanting to move on, squinting ahead at the next thing, and how appropriate it should be, starting 2012 this way, coming to church.

You know, we look back at 2011, maybe some of you are thinking, here's some things that I regret about 2011.

There are some things that I wish I'd done different. As I look at 2012, here's what I hope to do this year.

Well you know this, but I'd like to remind you of it.

Time is like money. And if you are not deliberate about how you spend it, it's going to be gone you're going to wonder where what is that true as I was with money for me I'm not deliberate with here's how the money is going to be spent it's just really easy cup of coffee here stop sheets there you know trip to Walmart there were all money you know you where you go it's like that time if you're not deliberate in how you spend it were right so we're gonna look at Psalm 90 because it's all about time and I'd like to read it make a few comments and then we're going to go back through and pick up I have four words for you they're gonna take us into 2012 and all comes from this but Psalm 90 is a unique Psalm is the only one and the Psalms it was actually written by Moses and when he was writing this song the Israelites or wandering through the wilderness. You know that story.

Throughout Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Because of the unfaithfulness of Israel, God says, "This generation's gonna die out. The younger generation's gonna inherit the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." So Israel is on this 40-year-long camping trip.

And that's what prompted Moses to write this.

First of all, look at the first couple of verses.

And I have just a heaving in mind, it's infinite God.

Moses said, "Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, From everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

Infinite God.

It's funny, on what was going on while this was written.

Israel would have said that she was between homes, so to speak, right?

Where was Israel at home?

Well, they just left Egypt and God had promised them this land, but they're not in either place.

But look what he says in verse one, "Lord, you have been our dwelling place." "Lord, you have been our dwelling place." Sam and I have a joke that is gonna run its course here very soon, but as he's been moving, from Warren, Ohio and has been living with the grooms and they're gonna be getting their own apartment here what like this week right end of this week but so many times over the past few months I said hey what are you doing Sunday he said well after church I'm going home I'm like you're going where well I'm going back to Ohio like this is your home now okay but this is just kind a joke that we had between us and Aaron and I were laughing about that yesterday.

Sam's like, "I'm confused. Which is my home?" This is your home now. Well, again, what's in store for us as a church? People have asked us, "Are we getting our own building? What's happening in 2012?" Well, I'd like to remind you, Big Harvest, the mothership as we call it, started in 1988 with 18 people.

And today, in Chicagoland, there are six campuses and over 13,000 people.

They have a television studio and the whole nine.

And the Lord has brought them through quite a bit.

As we're sure he's going to do with us, But you know, James McDonald was here, he'd tell you the same thing.

None of that matters.

How many campuses they have, how cool their television studio is, none of that matters.

And for us, none of it matters whether we're meeting in the chiropractor's office, or we're meeting in the auditorium, or we're meeting in a high school cafeteria.

That doesn't matter where we call home because who is our dwelling place?

Yeah, God, you have been our dwelling place.

That's why we can feel at home no matter where we meet.

Realizing that if the school districts called us tomorrow and said, "You know what?

You can't make the school anymore." Are we going to say, "Well, that's it for the church." Is that what we're going to say?

Because the Lord is our dwelling place.

Notice, in all generations, Hoppe makes such a statement.

Well, because of what he says at the end of verse 2, "From everlasting to everlasting you are God." And that's what we take refuge in.

God is just as much God today as He was a month ago, as He was a year ago, as He was 6,000 years ago, and as He will be for all of eternity. God is God from everlasting to everlasting.

I'd like to remind you, speaking of Moses, remember when Moses said to the Lord, "Well, who should I tell the Israelites sent me?" What was God's answer in Exodus chapter 3?

Remember the answer? Who should I say sent me? What did God say?

And I love that answer.

God didn't say, "Tell them I was sent you." I was, like, you know Moses back in the day?

He was great once upon a time, and we're, you know, living off this legend, nor did he say, "Tell them I will be sent you." As if God's like, "I have this untouched potential. Someday, if I keep, you know, taking my vitamins, and, you know, someday I'm going to be something." No, he said, "I am." He is, I am.

These are dwelling place in all generations.

Let's go on in the text.

That's infinite God, now let's talk about finite man.

Verses 3-6 You return man to dust, and say, "Return, O children of man." For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.

A watch was a period of about three or four hours.

You sweep them away as with a flood.

They are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning.

In the morning, it flourishes and is renewed.

In the evening, it fades and withers.

So we have infinite God.

we have finite man sometime ago there was some news thing about some celebrity that passed away I don't remember who it is now.

Some celebrity passed away and Erin turned to me and she said, "Oh wow was that expected?" And I said, "Yeah." She's like, "What do you mean?" I'm like, "Well, we knew he was gonna die someday." "Man, you're such a smart owl. How's your wife put up with you?" I don't know.

I'm not saying this tritely, but sometimes we just seem so shocked when there's death.

And Moses is reminding us here, it's still one per customer.

If I seem a little owly around the holidays, December 21st, 2003, my father passed away.

And then, you know, he died on the 21st, and I had his funeral just a few days later.

So sometimes you catch me the wrong day or on Christmas.

I get a little owl-y, you know, thinking about dad.

And we had a long period of him being sick.

And-- but I know there's some people in here that have lost loved ones, even this past year.

Infinite God, but finite man.

Notice verse 5, he says, "This is just reality." He said, "Here's how fragile life is, "just like being swept away like a flood." He says, "Like a dream, "so short, ending so suddenly." He says, "Like grass." In fact, the Bible uses a lot of terms to describe the shortness of life, the imminence of death. Psalm 49 verse 12 says that we're like beasts that perish. Psalm 78 verse 39, we're like the wind. Psalm 103 verse 14, we're like dust, as Moses mentioned here. We're of us are most familiar with James 4, 414 rather, where James says your life is a vapor.

And it's, there's a sense of sadness in the, in the shortness of it and how frail it is and you kind of pick that up in the text.

Then Moses moves on looking at verses 7-11 talking about reverence for God and His sovereignty and His judgment.

He says, "For we are brought to an end by your anger, by your wrath.

We are dismayed.

You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins, in the light of your presence.

all our days pass away under your wrath. We bring our years to an end like a sigh.

The years of our life are seventy or even by reason of strength eighty.

Yet their span is but toil and trouble. They are soon gone and we fly away.

Reverence for God, sovereignty, and judgment.

The verse that really sticks out to me, look at verse 10.

He says, "Year of our life are 70, "or by reason of strength, 80." Now I'm looking to ask you, the oldest person is in here, do we have anybody that's like close to that 70 to 80 range in here?

So then I thought about it some more and I realized I don't think that's what Moses did say when he says, "Teach us to number our days." So let's look at four words for the church.

Four words for the church, and you're going to be hearing these or some variation of these throughout the year, because this is what we're going after.

The same thing that Moses said he was going after, that's what we're going after.

The first word, number one, is urgency.

Look at verse 12 again.

he says it teaches to number our days so that we may get a heart of wisdom in light of everything he said he said you know what god you are you are infinite we are just finite temporary creatures passing through the earth and we realize god that we're coming back to you after seventy or eighty years or more or more or much less so because of the fact that he applied to those who says he just a number of days so he's not asking the god helps us calculate when we made i saw this popping up on face book last couple weeks to see those little tombstones and say here's how you live how you die he's a single shows when we made our he was calling on God to help us meditate on how we live.

We had a older guy at the church that I came from, he always used to talk about the dash.

The dash, he'd get up and he'd do, whether it was offering meditation, I've heard him preach at funerals, so I remember he's like, he would always talk about your dash.

On your tombstone, there's gonna be two dates.

He always said, "What are you doing with your dash?" That's what Moses is talking about.

When he says, "Teach us to number our days." It's knowing that our days on this earth have a number.

God in his sovereignty knows how many days you're going to live, right?

Your days do have a number.

The only problem for us is we don't know what that number is.

we know. Most of us probably won't make it to 75. But you don't know if that number of days is a thousand. You don't know if that number of days is 30. What if you have 30 days left? Or what if you had 7? What if you're like, "This next week is the last week in my life or what if it was today?

Yes, I think none of us have any idea.

That's why he says, God teaches to number of days, help us get it in our heads that we're just passing through here.

We need to stop and evaluate how we're living.

Wisdom says I'm going to make the most of however many days I have left.

What that means is you're going to say, I'm going to seek the Lord passionately, like this might be my last day, because it might.

I'm going to spend time in God's work.

I'm going to be praying to God, knowing that I might be meeting Him today, face to face.

And for others, it might be, you know, I have some broken relationships in my life.

I haven't talked to my mom in five years.

Or I have a severed relationship with this person.

Or my brother and I had a falling out and we never really came to terms with that.

And do it today.

You see, this is urgency.

Moses on behalf of Israel, and I would say today, as a church, these are corporate pleas for us to adopt these principles.

So urgency, number two, here's your second word for 2012, is dependency.

When Moses cries out, "Return, O Lord!" How long?

Did you ever feel like God's far away at a distance? Did you ever feel like that? He's really not.

Did you know that? The Bible says he is not far from every one of us, Acts 17. So if God feels distant, who was the one that's created the gap?

It's us. It just feels like, you know, I really believe that's what Moses is saying here.

Sometimes it feels like, "God, you're so far off, and we need you to come back.

Return." But whatever the case is, you see in Moses a cry of dependency.

Like, "I got this, God. We made it this far. We'll make it the rest of the way." No. He says, "Lord," just like Clearback in Exodus, when he says, "If you're not going with us, don't even send us." Moses is still saying, "We need you, God. We need you." Do you realize you are always 100% dependent on God, whether you feel like it or not? Do you know that?

Sometimes God allows circumstances in our lives where we feel our need for Him or our dependence upon Him.

But sadly, too many times in our lives, if there's a couple bucks in the bank account and our health is okay.

The Bible says today is the day of salvation.

If you have it in your mind, yes sometime in 2012 I'm going to get real serious about the Lord.

And if you have made that decision to follow Christ, understand this, you're just as dependent on Him for your Christian living as you were for your salvation.

you know that? God is not like, "Okay, you're saved, now go get 'em, I'll see you when you're done." That's not the Lord. He says, "I have redeemed you, I have saved you, and now I am going to fill you and be at work through you." That's what happens in salvation, but that sustaining grace, we are just as dependent on that as we are for saving grace.

Okay, and that's why as a church, and Sammy and I, we've had this conversation, you know, going back July and August when things looked like, you know, is this church going to get launched?

We were like, God, if you don't show up, this church is not going to happen.

"Okay, God, we got the church launched and we got the middle school, so we'll see you at the rapture or heaven or whatever." No. We are just as dependent on the Lord now as we were back in August.

It just doesn't feel as urgent, I guess you could say.

But we're going to keep getting back to Him to say, "God, we need you just as desperately right now as we did then." dependency dependency Jesus said John 15 5 Bible people apart from me you can do nothing nothing you know that verse don't you that's true Jesus and apart from him you can do nothing nothing that's urgency dependency thirdly sufficiency 14) "Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil." The third word for the church is "sufficiency." You know, our yearly theme is "Jesus is first," the preeminence there's only one problem with that yearly theme you know what it is I say jokingly what are we gonna do next year like how do you top that what you don't right but like what do you okay Jesus is first that's our that's our theme for year one what's gonna be our theme for year two what do we move on from there well really the answer is we don't ever move on from there do we to the point where we're like, okay, we got down to the fact that Jesus is first, now let's move on to something else. No. How would you, how would you complete this statement?
