All right, so you can turn your Bibles to Psalm 58.

    01:10-01:11

    Psalm 58.

    01:12-01:17

You know, as an observer of the human condition, I love to hear about what annoys people.

    01:18-01:25

Because we're all so different, and we all have different pet peeves that really just crawl under our skin and drive us insane.

    01:26-01:29

What annoys me may not annoy you, and vice versa.

    01:30-01:37

So before I share with you one of my biggest pet peeves, take 20 seconds to turn to the person next to you and share your biggest pet peeve.

    01:37-01:38

    All right, 20 seconds.

    01:41-01:42

All right, all right, I gave you more than 20 seconds.

    01:44-01:55

I could unfurl a long list of my pet peeves, but there's one that's really been bothering me lately, and that is junk mail, both virtual and physical.

    01:55-01:58

Who else is annoyed by junk mail besides me?

    01:58-02:05

I hate when I get home from work, I open up the mailbox and it's packed to the raft with useless nonsense, that's gonna end up in the garbage.

    02:06-02:14

But the worst part is I can't just throw the whole bundle in the trash, because interspersed in that pile is things I can't ignore, things I have to look at.

    02:15-02:24

So I have to go through this whole process of flipping through the stack to separate the junk from the necessities and the irrelevant from the relevant.

    02:25-02:27

All right, we all hate that process.

    02:28-02:32

And since misery loves company, We're actually gonna sort through my mail together.

    02:32-02:33

    All right?

    02:33-02:37

And you're gonna tell me if it's junk or if it should be kept.

    02:38-02:39

All right, does that sound good?

    02:39-02:41

So if it's junk, yell out junk.

    02:41-02:42

And if it's a keep, yell out keep.

    02:43-02:43

    All right?

    02:45-02:47

First we have the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card.

    02:48-02:49

    What do we think?

    02:49-02:50

    All right, junk.

    02:52-02:53

    A Lowe's card.

    02:53-02:56

I just borrow my dad's tools when I need them, so.

    02:57-02:58

    I'm gonna say that's junk.

    02:59-03:03

A Disney Plus membership that's expired September 20th.

    03:04-03:05

    Alright, that's junk.

    03:06-03:09

    Preferred customer private VIP sale.

    03:10-03:13

Doesn't even say what it is for, just a sale.

    03:13-03:14

    Junk?

    03:14-03:14

    Alright, junk.

    03:15-03:18

    Oh, a Citi credit card.

    03:19-03:19

    Alright, junk.

    03:21-03:24

Okay, a personal note from my financial advisor.

    03:26-03:26

    That's probably a keep.

    03:26-03:27

    Yeah, that's probably a keep.

    03:29-03:31

All right, Instacart, get groceries delivered.

    03:33-03:34

    Junk, all right.

    03:34-03:35

    Oh, this is nice.

    03:35-03:38

The Home Magazine, the Christmas light edition.

    03:40-03:40

    All right, junk.

    03:41-03:45

And last but not least, All Star five cigar combo cutter.

    03:46-03:47

    Only $16.

    03:50-03:51

    All right, this one's split.

    03:52-03:54

If you want to take this later, I won't judge you.

    03:54-03:56

I'll leave it right here, all right?

    03:58-04:03

Now you may be thinking, okay Taylor, that was fun and all, but what's the point of all this?

    04:04-04:11

Well, I was thinking this past week that so many Christians often mirror this same process in their Bible reading.

    04:12-04:22

We flip through the Old Testament and we completely skip over certain sections because they seem insignificant and unimportant to us in 2023.

    04:23-04:39

Many of us flip through the beginning of our Bibles and think, oh, I love Genesis, I love Creation account, I love the first chapters of the book of Exodus, but then you get to Moses going on and on about the priest's robes and the Ark of the Covenant, and I just kinda check out a little bit.

    04:41-04:46

Speaking of checking out, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, that just, that's a rough go.

    04:48-04:50

Doesn't really seem relevant to my life.

    04:51-04:58

All that law stuff seems tedious and irrelevant, so we rush through it, we ignore it, we treat it like it's junk mail.

    05:00-05:11

Jumping forward to the book of Psalms, we love the laments, the praise and wisdom Psalms, which Pastor Jeff, Mike Wolski, and Matt Cole expertly preached on over the past three weeks.

    05:11-05:18

But then we hit an imprecatory Psalm like the one I'm about to preach on this morning, and we have no idea what to make of it.

    05:20-05:23

Now you may be wondering, Taylor, what is an imprecatory psalm?

    05:24-05:34

These are the psalms that are focused on praying that God would punish the wicked, that God would punish those who oppose him, those who seek to persecute his people.

    05:35-05:43

Fed up men pray that the hammer of misfortune and justice would fall upon the wicked, would fall upon the unjust.

    05:45-05:52

As believers this side of the cross, we look at a psalm like this and we think, This can't possibly apply to my life.

    05:53-05:57

This can't possibly be something I should add to my prayer life, right?

    05:59-06:08

So we kind of shrug our shoulders and treat the imprecatory Psalms like junk mail that we brush off the tables of our mind and throw in the spiritual trash.

    06:10-06:10

    But guess what?

    06:11-06:13

God's word contains no junk mail.

    06:14-06:16

It is all valuable and important.

    06:16-06:19

We can't skip or ignore any of it.

    06:20-06:27

We are a church that preaches the entire word of God without apology, even the difficult and challenging parts.

    06:28-06:39

So in light of this conviction, we're gonna focus our attention upon studying Psalm 58 and contemplating how the Lord wants us to respond to injustice as his people.

    06:40-06:46

Along the way, we'll discover that we should love what God loves, but also hate what God hates.

    06:47-06:56

We must find a biblical balance between possessing a righteous anger and showing the unconditional grace of Jesus Christ.

    06:57-07:02

And this biblical balance should affect how we live and how we pray.

    07:03-07:08

So before we dive into Psalm 58, let's go to the Lord and ask for his help because we need it.

    07:10-07:14

Father, as we come to your word, I pray that we would humble ourselves.

    07:15-07:22

I pray that we would submit to you in whatever you say, or that we would remember that you are God and we are not.

    07:24-07:29

Lord, our opinions do not matter in the face of your authoritative truth.

    07:31-07:33

So I pray for every single person in this room.

    07:34-07:37

I pray that you would minister to them in the way that you ministered to.

    07:38-07:42

Your Holy Spirit would challenge, He would convict, He would comfort as well.

    07:43-07:44

    In Jesus' name, amen.

    07:45-07:50

So the question we're gonna answer this morning is, how should I respond to injustice?

    07:51-07:54

How should I respond to injustice?

    07:54-07:58

And firstly, I should recognize that corruption is inevitable.

    07:59-08:02

I should recognize that corruption is inevitable.

    08:04-08:08

So David doesn't waste any time with niceties and fluffy language.

    08:09-08:13

Instead, he jumps right in to what is bothering him in verses one through two.

    08:14-08:15

    Look at what he says.

    08:16-08:18

Do you indeed decree what is right, you gods?

    08:19-08:21

Do you judge the children of man uprightly?

    08:22-08:24

No, in your hearts you devise wrongs.

    08:24-08:27

Your hands deal out violence on the earth.

    08:29-08:34

To be clear, David isn't speaking to actual gods in this passage because there is only one God.

    08:35-08:40

In the Hebrew, this word for gods can also be translated as mighty lords or mighty rulers.

    08:41-08:49

So he is speaking to those in a position of authority who are using their platform for evil instead of good.

    08:50-08:54

So he asked two questions with a very obvious answer.

    08:55-09:00

As I ask each of David's questions again, please loudly shout out the obvious answer.

    09:01-09:03

Do you indeed decree what is right, you rulers?

    09:05-09:06

All right, that was really bad.

    09:06-09:07

    I'm gonna do that again.

    09:08-09:10

Do you indeed decree what is right, you rulers?

    09:13-09:14

    The answer is no, everybody.

    09:16-09:17

I'm gonna give you a chance for the second one.

    09:18-09:21

Do you judge the children of men uprightly, you mighty lords?

    09:22-09:23

    All right, that was okay.

    09:24-09:31

He then says they continually invent new ways to wrong others and they deal out violence and oppression on the earth.

    09:33-09:41

David is pointing out that corruption is an inevitable fact of life, especially at the top of the leadership ladder.

    09:41-09:54

There are many men and women in positions of authority who abuse their God-given role to glorify themselves, to lie in their own pockets, and to advance destructive agendas.

    09:55-10:02

I mean, in our country right now, we have politicians and lobbyists who continually push for the murder of unborn children.

    10:04-10:08

and the gender transitioning of children and teenagers.

    10:09-10:26

And many in the educational system are lining behind this horrific scheme and indoctrinating children with lies about their identity and sexuality that will leave permanent scars on their body, that will leave spiritual and emotional scars.

    10:28-10:29

    What about the church world?

    10:31-10:47

Over the past 10 years, we've been bombarded with story after story and case after case of pastors, church leaders and elders mistreating staff, embezzling funds, participating in and covering up sexual abuse.

    10:49-10:54

Those entrusted with the care of precious souls are instead dashing them into a million pieces.

    10:56-11:06

We so often highlight the injustices happening here in the US, but there are so many leaders across the world right now committing shocking atrocities against their citizens.

    11:08-11:14

The North Korean government continually shuts down house churches and sentences Christians to labor camps.

    11:15-11:22

Believers who still remain in Afghanistan must keep a low profile due to the return of the Taliban to power in 2021.

    11:25-11:30

Did you know that over 5,600 Christians were murdered for their faith last year alone.

    11:31-11:43

Over 5,600 of our brothers and sisters from Christ were slaughtered because of their love for Jesus Christ, because of their dedication to meeting together and spreading the good news.

    11:45-11:52

And 90% of these deaths occurred in Nigeria, where Islamic militants are committing brutal raids against Christian communities.

    11:53-11:59

And the Nigerian government's trying to sweep this under the rug and say that it has nothing to do religious persecution.

    12:00-12:02

    Why is this happening?

    12:02-12:07

Why is there so much injustice and wickedness on a global scale?

    12:10-12:17

Well, David goes on to clearly explain why corruption is inevitable and why wicked leaders do wicked things.

    12:18-12:20

Let's read verses three through five.

    12:20-12:22

"The wicked are estranged from the womb.

    12:22-12:25

"They go astray from birth, speaking lies.

    12:26-12:35

"They have venom like the venom of serpents, but the deaf adder that stops its ear so that it does not hear the voice of charmers rather the cunning enchanter.

    12:36-12:37

    So why is this happening?

    12:38-12:40

    Simple answer, because of sin.

    12:42-12:45

I know it's a Sunday school answer, but it's what the text says.

    12:45-12:50

We live in a fallen world that is filled with fallen people and fallen leaders.

    12:52-12:54

Listen again to what David says in verse three.

    12:54-12:55

The wicked are estranged from the womb.

    12:55-12:58

and they go astray from birth speaking lies.

    13:00-13:05

Contrary to popular belief, we do not come into this world as perfect babies with halos over our heads.

    13:07-13:09

We then become sinful as soon as we do something wrong.

    13:10-13:12

No, we are not sinners because we sin.

    13:12-13:14

We sin because we are sinners.

    13:15-13:23

We inherited a sin nature from the first man, Adam, and that sin nature leads us away from God and not towards him.

    13:24-13:34

apart from the miraculous intervention of God, that inherent wickedness in our heart will spread like a weed and choke out the life of everything around it.

    13:36-13:43

If you put a heart that is hard into the Lord and fill with the poison of pride and a position of power, there is going to be problems.

    13:44-13:46

There is going to be misconduct.

    13:48-13:58

In verses four through five, David compares this kind of immoral leader to a venomous serpent that willfully doesn't pay attention to its owner and snake charmer.

    13:59-14:01

We all know what a snake charmer is, right?

    14:02-14:05

This is a common form of entertainment back in David's day in the Middle East.

    14:06-14:19

Snake charmers would have a snake in a basket and a crowd would form around, they would play their flute and hopefully the snake would come under the charm of the flute and sway back and forth kind of like it was dancing.

    14:21-14:29

But if the snake didn't pay attention, if it willfully didn't listen to the flute, there could be serious consequences.

    14:29-14:34

The snake could bite the charmer or those who are watching around the basket.

    14:36-14:43

In a much greater way, the wicked rulers of this world refuse to listen to the call of godliness and repentance.

    14:44-14:46

They refuse to submit to the Lord.

    14:46-14:49

They refuse to submit to their heavenly owner.

    14:49-14:56

Instead of dancing to his glorious and heavenly tune, they go their own way to bite and infect others.

    14:58-15:03

It's just common sense that a wild and venomous serpent will cause a lot of damage.

    15:04-15:10

And it's only common sense that an unchecked leader will leave a lot of damage in his or her wake.

    15:13-15:18

You know, during my tenure as a youth pastor, I went on a lot of missions, trips, and retreats.

    15:19-15:23

And if you've been on a missions trip, then you know that you never have five star accommodations.

    15:24-15:30

Typically on these missions trips, we stayed in school buildings where mice roam free and the AC broke during the Reagan administration.

    15:31-15:34

It's just part of the entire experience.

    15:35-15:41

And there were two years in particular where all the guys on the trip were jammed into one room together.

    15:42-15:46

And let me just say, this wasn't the most hygienic and clean of places.

    15:47-16:17

Underwear open chip bags muddy socks littered the floor guys would put their wet gross laundry on the fans That were meant to keep us cool and to spread that aroma across the entire room At the end of the workday I would go back into that room and get smacked in the face with an abominable wall of stench It was like all the guys were fighting to see who smelled the worst, but they were all winning But what could I expect?

    16:18-16:23

Should I have expected that room to smell like a fresh meadow or the candle section at Bath and Body Works?

    16:25-16:37

No, when you get 20 guys in a room together with no AC, no open windows, after 10 hours in the blaring heat, there's gonna be a funky stench. It's unavoidable.

    16:37-16:39

    What else could I expect?

    16:41-16:52

In a much greater way, we walk into a sinful world every single day and we are hit with a sinful stench, yet we so often act shocked by this development.

    16:53-16:57

You know, as a pastor, people often ask me, "Can you believe this is happening right now?

    16:57-17:01

"Can you believe our culture's accepting that?" And my answer's always the same.

    17:02-17:03

"Yeah, I can totally believe it.

    17:03-17:11

"What else do you expect?" The New Testament tells us that Satan is the ruler of this sinful age.

    17:12-17:15

He is the God of the sinful societies of this world.

    17:15-17:20

He is hard at work, deceiving, manipulating and twisting what is good.

    17:22-17:27

Why are we as Christians so shocked that people prefer the darkness to the light?

    17:27-17:33

Why are we so surprised that lost people act like lost people?

    17:34-17:45

We should know better than anyone that this world is a broken place and it is filled with many people who are blind to the truth, are blind to the glories of salvation in Jesus Christ.

    17:47-17:50

At this point, you may be thinking, so I should just do nothing, Taylor.

    17:50-17:53

I should just throw my arms up in the air and just say, well, corruption's inevitable, that's it.

    17:55-17:57

Well, that's not what I'm saying, and that's not what David is saying either.

    17:58-18:04

In the face of injustice, David makes it clear that we should pray that God will act.

    18:05-18:08

We should pray that God will act.

    18:09-18:12

Let's read verses six to nine to unpack this a bit more.

    18:14-18:16

Oh God, break the teeth in their mouths.

    18:17-18:19

Tear out the fangs of the young lions, oh Lord.

    18:20-18:22

Let them vanish like water that runs away.

    18:22-18:24

When he aims his arrows, let them be blunted.

    18:25-18:28

Let them be like the snail that dissolves into slime.

    18:29-18:31

Like the stillborn child who never sees the sun.

    18:32-18:39

Sooner than your pots can feel the heat of thorns, whether green or ablaze, may he sweep them away.

    18:41-18:43

Remember those sharp teeth that we were just talking about?

    18:44-18:49

David asked, God, break those things like glass in their mouths.

    18:49-18:55

Defang these leaders who run around like wild lions before they can hurt anyone else.

    18:57-19:02

Let them be washed away from your people like in a ravine during a downpour.

    19:02-19:08

When they aim their bows of attack, let their arrows be blunted and broken.

    19:09-19:16

Let them melt away like on a hot summer day, like a snail in a pile of its own disgusting slime.

    19:18-19:22

And David's harshest comparison is one that's a bit hard to read and even say out loud.

    19:24-19:29

He asked these crooked leaders to be like a stillborn child that never gets to experience the light of day.

    19:31-19:37

Finally, may they be destroyed as quickly as a pile of dried up thorns being cooked over an open fire.

    19:40-19:43

It's easy to look at these verses and think, whoa, whoa, David, calm down, man.

    19:44-19:44

    You must be hangry.

    19:45-19:48

Sit down, eat a Snickers bar, you'll go back to normal.

    19:50-19:53

We look at this and it seems like David is out of line.

    19:54-20:02

But actually, he is displaying a righteous anger, a holy indignation, a godly form of outrage.

    20:03-20:06

He's not blowing his top because Chick-fil-A got his order wrong.

    20:07-20:13

He's not losing his temper because he's stuck in standstill traffic like many of us lose our temper about.

    20:14-20:18

He is outraged that the weak are being preyed upon by those who should protect them.

    20:19-20:26

That many of the uppermost leaders around him refuse to practice basic human decency.

    20:26-20:31

that the wicked are flaunting their sin, acting like there is no God, there are no consequences.

    20:33-20:37

David uses harsh language for harsh realities of life.

    20:40-20:47

You know, it's a good and godly thing to pray that God would bring his justice to bear in every area of life.

    20:48-20:58

In 1 Timothy 2, verses one through two, we are called to pray for all the leaders that God has placed an authority above us, even the ones we don't like very much.

    21:00-21:05

But that doesn't mean that we should pray for their continued victories in future elections.

    21:05-21:15

We should pray that those who are in office who are abusing their positions would be voted out in the next election cycle and replaced with those who advance godly legislation.

    21:17-21:26

We recognize that God sovereignly put them in these positions for a reason, but we can also ask that he'll remove them from these positions in the future.

    21:27-21:41

On the same note, we can pray that the Lord would bring consequences such as prison time upon elected officials and business leaders who continually break the law, lie through their teeth, and abuse the system for their own financial gain.

    21:41-21:51

We should pray that wicked and violent dictators and tyrannical governments would be overthrown by the one true king of the universe.

    21:51-22:06

We should pray that abusive and heretical pastors would be driven from their pulpits and replaced with faithful men of God who will humble themselves before the word to preach it and faithfully shepherd the flock.

    22:07-22:17

We should pray against websites like Pornhub, which continually grease the wheel of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

    22:19-22:22

You know, there are two adult stores more than 10 minutes of my house.

    22:22-22:26

And very often when I drive by them, I ask that God would shut these businesses down.

    22:27-22:31

And there's one in particular that has a sinkhole in the parking lot that hasn't been fixed yet.

    22:31-22:59

And sometimes I'll drive by and say, "God, at nighttime when no one's in the store, "please open up another sinkhole under the store "and destroy that place forever." We should pray that our holy God would let justice "down like a river, and righteousness "like an ever-flowing stream." But as I said at the beginning of this message, we need to find a balance with these kind of prayers.

    23:00-23:10

Yes, we should pray for justice to be carried out and for God to frustrate the plans of the wicked, but this shouldn't be our primary aspect of our prayer lives.

    23:10-23:13

David wasn't praying like this 24/7.

    23:13-23:16

He wasn't praying like this all day, every day.

    23:17-23:19

We also shouldn't look at God as our personal score settler.

    23:20-23:23

God, zap that guy at work who's giving me a hard time.

    23:23-23:26

God, zap that guy in my neighbor who's doing something shady.

    23:26-23:27

    They deserve it.

    23:28-23:29

    Guess what?

    23:30-23:30

    You deserve it too.

    23:32-23:41

If you're a follower of Christ, never forget that God didn't give you what you deserve, which is his holy and just wrath for your sin.

    23:42-23:52

Instead, he gave his own son what you deserve and then gave you what Christ deserves, which is loving acceptance and never-ending fellowship.

    23:53-23:59

Never forget where you were heading when God saved you and set you on the path to salvation.

    24:02-24:12

As we express our righteous anger, we must never lose sight of the command to love others and show the same grace that has been shown to us.

    24:14-24:17

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus himself gives us this command.

    24:18-24:24

But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

    24:26-24:31

Jesus didn't just talk the talk, but he actually walked the walk when it came to loving his enemies.

    24:32-24:38

As he's hanging on the cross in agony, there are some who have the audacity to mock him.

    24:39-24:41

This is the son of God.

    24:41-24:43

This is the creator of the universe.

    24:43-24:47

He could have called down a legion of angels to hack them to pieces.

    24:47-24:52

He could have summoned flaming hail from heaven to light them up.

    24:53-24:54

    Is that what he does?

    24:55-24:56

    What does he do instead?

    24:58-25:03

He prays for them and says, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

    25:05-25:10

In Acts chapter 7, Stephen is stoned for his dedication to preach in the gospel.

    25:11-25:29

And as he's being pelted with rocks, He looks up to heaven and says, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." These passages are so powerful and convicting because they go against the flow of our culture and our own fleshly tendencies.

    25:31-25:37

These examples from scripture reminded me of a true story that I heard in another sermon several months ago.

    25:39-25:42

Moses Hall was a Jamaican pastor in the early 1800s.

    25:43-25:47

And at that time in history, there were African slaves who were in Jamaica.

    25:47-25:49

    Many of them were Christians.

    25:50-25:55

And these African Christians would often gather together to worship and to pray.

    25:56-26:00

And Moses Hall and his assistant David led these times of prayer.

    26:01-26:05

The only problem was these times of prayer were outlawed by the slave owners.

    26:07-26:12

So unfortunately, one of these prayer meetings is discovered and the slave owners decide to make an example.

    26:14-26:26

They grab a hold of the assistant David, they kill him, they decapitate him, and they put his head in the center of the village as a warning for everyone else.

    26:28-26:46

They then drag Moses in the middle of the village and they point to David's head and they say, "Who is that?" And he says, "That's David." And they say, "Do you know why we did that?" And he said, "For praying." They said, "That's right, and the same is gonna happen "to you if you continue to pray.

    26:46-26:53

"No more prayer meetings." There's a lot of ways that Moses could have responded in that moment.

    26:54-26:59

He could have submitted to their demands to never lead a prayer meeting ever again.

    27:00-27:03

He could have vowed vengeance for the life of his friend.

    27:05-27:14

And instead, he kneeled down and he said, "Let us pray." And all the African Christians got down with him and they prayed.

    27:15-27:16

And do you know what they prayed for?

    27:17-27:25

They prayed for the salvation of these slavers and these murderers who constantly abused and mistreated them.

    27:26-27:27

    How is that possible?

    27:29-27:36

Because when you truly encounter the transforming grace of Jesus Christ, you can't help but extend it to others.

    27:38-27:48

It must become second nature for us to follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Master as we pray for those who mistreat us, those who oppose us and seek ways to hurt us.

    27:51-27:57

In this Psalm, it's important to notice that David never asked God to withhold eternal forgiveness from his wicked leaders.

    27:59-28:05

Yes, we should pray that the unjust would experience immediate penalties for their crimes in this life.

    28:06-28:13

But we should also pray that the eternal consequences for their sin would be washed away by the blood of Jesus.

    28:15-28:25

May they be found guilty in the eyes of human courts for the sake of others, but may they be found not guilty in the high court of heaven for the sake of their eternal souls.

    28:26-28:29

We can pray for both of these things at the same exact time.

    28:32-28:34

Finally, how should I respond to injustice?

    28:35-28:38

I should rejoice that God is the righteous judge.

    28:39-28:43

I should rejoice that God is the righteous judge.

    28:45-28:58

So several weeks ago, Pastor Jeff kicked off this sermon series by walking us through a Psalm of lament where Asaph is fed up with the reality that the wicked seem to get off scot-free with no consequences.

    28:59-29:07

But by the end of the Psalm, he comes to the realization that he shouldn't envy the wicked because their end is tragic and sad.

    29:08-29:14

And David comes to the same exact conclusion at the end of Psalm 58 and verses 10 through 11.

    29:15-29:18

The righteous will rejoice when he sees the vengeance.

    29:18-29:21

He will bathe his feet in the blood of the wicked.

    29:21-29:25

Mankind will say, surely there is a reward for the righteous.

    29:26-29:28

Surely there is a God who judges.

    29:29-29:30

    on the earth.

    29:32-29:35

Whether in this life or the next, there will be consequences.

    29:36-29:39

There will be a reckoning for the sins of these wicked leaders.

    29:40-29:45

Because God sees, hears, and knows all.

    29:46-29:49

He sees that back alley deal that nobody else sees.

    29:49-29:54

He sees that wicked pillar of the community doing horrible things behind closed doors.

    29:55-29:59

He sees the secret intentions and schemes of the heart.

    29:59-30:02

No one really gets away with anything.

    30:04-30:07

The Bible is so clear on the necessity of judgment.

    30:09-30:17

Those who continually resisted the call to turn from their sin and trust in Christ will experience the full weight of the wrath of Almighty God.

    30:18-30:25

Their shady track record will be exposed, and their secret sins will be shouted from the rooftops.

    30:26-30:29

What was once openly flaunted will be openly punished.

    30:31-30:37

God will inflict his righteous vengeance upon those who rejected him and his ways for all of eternity.

    30:38-30:44

And David says that those who are righteous will rejoice when they see this long-delayed bill come due.

    30:45-30:49

He says that they will bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked.

    30:50-30:52

Now you may be thinking, Taylor, That sounds really gross and I don't want to do that.

    30:53-30:55

Well, thankfully it's metaphorical and not literal.

    30:56-31:06

This means that God's people will share in his victory, like soldiers following a king and general through the streets of a city that has been conquered.

    31:06-31:08

We will share in the victory of our Lord.

    31:10-31:19

But right now you may be thinking, "Taylor, you told us a few minutes ago "that we should pray for the salvation "of these wicked leaders, but now you're saying "that we're gonna rejoice at their downfall?

    31:21-31:21

    Is that a contradiction?

    31:21-31:22

    Which one is it?

    31:24-31:37

Well, to help you unpack this a little bit, imagine with me that one of the worst case scenarios happens to you that we've seen play out in many movies and news stories, as an armed intruder enters into your home.

    31:38-31:43

After repeated warnings, you unfortunately have to use deadly force.

    31:45-32:00

You call the police, you do an investigation, "you are fully exonerated of all wrongdoing "because it was a clear-cut case of self-defense." In a sense, you would rejoice that your family is safe and sound, right?

    32:01-32:04

But let me ask you, would you rejoice about what happened to the intruder?

    32:04-32:06

Would you be happy about that?

    32:07-32:11

No, you would feel a sense of weight and sadness that this had to happen.

    32:12-32:16

You wish that they had listened to your repeated warnings to stop and to leave.

    32:17-32:22

You wish there had been a different outcome, but there was no other choice in that moment.

    32:24-32:25

It's the same with God's judgment.

    32:26-32:45

Yes, we should rejoice that Jesus Christ will return to right every wrong and punish evil once and for all, but we should also feel a weight of sadness that there are many people who willfully reject eternal life, who willfully spurn the gospel.

    32:47-32:51

We should share God's own attitude from Ezekiel 33, verse 11.

    32:52-33:01

As I live, declares the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live.

    33:02-33:04

That is the heart of our God.

    33:05-33:10

He does not delight in the punishment of those made in his image, and neither should we.

    33:12-33:23

Brooming sin and injustice under the cosmic rug isn't an option for God because he is 100% pure and holy, it shouldn't look like a valid option to us as his holy people.

    33:24-33:34

But since we love God and since we love people, we must live in this tension of both rejoicing and lamenting at the promise of judgment.

    33:37-33:44

And for those of you who are in this room who are not Christians, Please know that I have been praying for you all week.

    33:46-33:58

I have been praying that the Lord would cause you to repent of your sin and turn to Jesus Christ alone for salvation, to place your faith and trust in him alone.

    33:59-34:03

Please know that judgment doesn't have to be your future.

    34:03-34:06

Turn from your wicked way and live.

    34:08-34:10

You can become a child of God.

    34:10-34:13

you can become my spiritual brother and sister today.

    34:14-34:16

I would love to have you in the family.

    34:17-34:20

If you don't know where you stand with God, please talk to me after the service.

    34:20-34:21

    Please talk to Pastor Jeff.

    34:21-34:24

We would love nothing more than to talk to you more about this.

    34:25-34:31

Please don't leave this building today without making the most important decision of your life that will affect your eternity.

    34:34-34:38

So David closes out this challenging psalm with a word of hope.

    34:40-34:45

hope that will change our perspective on the present and on eternity.

    34:46-34:52

Mankind will say, surely there is a reward for the righteous, surely there is a God who judges on earth.

    34:53-34:59

Right now, on September 24th, 2023, it seems like there is no reward for doing the right thing.

    35:00-35:03

It may seem like there aren't many consequences for doing the wrong thing either.

    35:05-35:20

But according to this passage, according to the rest of the word of God, there will be a day when every single person will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is a God who rules and reigns over heaven and earth.

    35:20-35:30

And this God is not only a righteous judge, but a righteous rewarder of those who diligently seek after him, for those who persevere in this life.

    35:32-35:39

And Paul speaks this in Galatians 6, 9, "Let us not grow weary of doing good." Why Paul, why should I not grow weary?

    35:41-35:46

For in due season we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

    35:47-35:54

So please do not grow weary of holding on to biblical convictions in a culture that hates what you stand for.

    35:54-36:01

Do not grow weary of being a man or woman of integrity who always does the right thing no matter what.

    36:02-36:07

Do not grow weary of loving your spouse when they fail to love you the way that they should.

    36:08-36:14

Do not grow weary of discipling your children when it seems like they don't care at all about what you're saying or what you're doing.

    36:15-36:22

Do not grow weary of seeking after the Lord in prayer when it feels like he's not even listening to you.

    36:22-36:26

Do not grow weary because there is a reward for the righteous.

    36:28-36:37

Pray for endurance, pray for patience, Pray that the Lord would change your perspective on this life and eternity.

    36:40-36:47

I sincerely hope that the Lord has used this series and the Psalms to change your perspective on prayer.

    36:48-36:54

I hope that these sermons have reminded you of the importance of being intentional and pursuing after the Lord.

    36:55-36:59

We need to be intentional about finding a biblical balance in our prayer lives.

    37:01-37:08

As we learned over the past month, we should lament before the Lord over the brokenness of this world, but ultimately trust that he is in control.

    37:09-37:14

We should praise God for who he is, for what he has done and what he continues to do.

    37:15-37:21

We should ask God for wisdom so that we can avoid the traps of our enemy and walk in holiness.

    37:22-37:28

And finally, we should pray the Lord to bring his perfect justice because he always does what is right.

    37:30-37:44

The Christian life will never be easy, but we make it way harder than it needs to be when we choose to be prayerless, when we choose to disconnect ourselves from the source of power, wisdom, and strength.

    37:47-37:50

So let's put what we learn into practice and pray right now.

    37:51-37:58

I want you to bow your heads, close your eyes, and go to the Lord for a few minutes and lift up your prayer life to him.

    38:01-38:13

If your prayers have been few and lifeless lately, ask that the Holy Spirit would reenergize you and give you a greater passion to approach the throne of grace.

    38:15-38:24

If you've been trying to white knuckle it through the struggles of life, ask that you be given a greater sense of your need for your heavenly Father day by day and moment by moment.

    38:26-38:32

Also ask that our church's spiritual momentum with prayer and at the end of this month, Bo would continue on.

    38:34-38:39

Let's come together to pray on purpose today, this upcoming week, and for the rest of our lives.

    38:40-38:40

Go to the Lord in prayer.

    38:43-38:49

Father, we come to you and thank you that we can come to you as our heavenly Father.

    38:51-39:01

Lord, you love us, that you care for us, and that you want us to approach your throne at our time of need, or any time we just wanna talk to you, Lord.

    39:02-39:05

Lord, we so often ignore this precious gift and we act like it's not a big deal.

    39:06-39:09

Lord, help us remember we get an audience with our Creator.

    39:09-39:12

We get to have an audience with the God of the universe.

    39:14-39:17

Lord, I pray that you would re-energize many of our prayer lives.

    39:17-39:33

Lord, we would seek after you every single day, that we would pray without ceasing continually throughout the day, Lord, that we wouldn't just rush into your presence with a list of demands, rather than rush out, that we take the time to praise you because you deserve our worship.

    39:35-39:39

We take time to be thankful for all the good gifts you have given to us, Lord.

    39:40-39:48

That Lord, we would pray for other people around us, we wouldn't be self-centered, Lord, that we would pray for your justice to come in this world.

    39:48-39:53

Lord, we know that one day everyone will know that you are the righteous judge.

    39:54-39:58

all wickedness, all sin will be taken care of once and for all and banished forever.

    39:59-40:05

We thank you for the victory of Christ, and we thank you that he will return to finalize that victory one day.

    40:06-40:13

Lord, help us to truly worship you throughout the rest of the service, throughout the rest of our lives.

    40:14-40:16

In the precious name of Jesus Christ, amen.

All right, good morning It is an honor and a privilege to be up here today it's something that I never feel like I deserve the opportunity to do but What do we deserve really in the end? So I am very excited to be up here and to get into the word with you this morning When I was about four or five years old, I remember going for a walk in the neighborhood with my mom And of course, you know, being a young boy, I was excited.

    01:37-01:38

I was ready to explore the world.

    01:38-01:40

And so I'm holding her hand.

    01:41-01:51

And at some point along the way in somebody's front yard, there was a nice green, must have been luscious looking cactus plant.

    01:52-02:03

I don't know if I'd ever seen a cactus plant at this point in my life, but before my mom could even react to what I was doing, I had my hand wrapped around this cactus plant.

    02:05-02:14

And I remember it didn't hurt at first until I like rubbed my hand on my pants and then I could feel, oh yeah, there's hundreds of little needles going into my hand.

    02:15-02:23

And so I remember for a few hours after that, my mom sitting there with tweezers and just plucking out all of these needles.

    02:24-02:29

And just when you thought all of them were gone, there'd be more in there and it was a whole big mess.

    02:31-02:39

And I couldn't help but thinking coming into this that that serves as a metaphor for some of the things that we do in our lives, is it not?

    02:40-02:47

I mean, how many really dumb things do we do or have we done, even if we knew better?

    02:48-02:49

Or maybe we just did them without thinking.

    02:51-02:57

And although it might not be something as foolish as grabbing a cactus, we can do things that are unwise that cause hurt.

    02:59-03:02

And I learned that day never to touch a cactus with my bare hands again.

    03:03-03:10

But sometimes we do things that are unwise, yet it takes more than just one time doing it to learn that we shouldn't do it again.

    03:12-03:20

Or maybe that one mistake sucks us into forming a pattern or making it a habit of making those same mistakes and bad decisions.

    03:21-03:23

It can get a lot more complicated.

    03:25-03:27

But that's not how God wants us to live.

    03:29-03:35

God doesn't want us to fall into temptations, to get caught up in the many traps of sin and despair that this life can offer.

    03:37-03:50

He doesn't want us to go around touching the metaphorical cactuses in our lives so that we spend those painful hours in the aftermath to clean up the mess, and sometimes in the process hurting those who love us.

    03:52-04:03

It hurt my mom to go through that, to have to pick all those needles out of my hand because she knew how much pain I was in. God wants us to gain wisdom and to live wisely.

    04:05-06:08

But what does wisdom even mean? It can mean a variety of things. One is what I was just talking about. It's avoiding foolishness so that you and those around you aren't hurt by your foolishness. And it's also the reverse of that. It's living in such a way that you and those around you, those you love, your spouse, your children, your friends, your family, whoever you interact with, they're blessed. When you live wisely, you become a blessing because your life is blessed, because you're living how God intended you to live. Now how do I know that God wants us to be wise? How can I stand up here and say something like that? Well, it's because it's scattered all throughout His Word that He's given us to read. There are entire books, like Proverbs, that are dedicated to helping us gain wisdom. God leads His people. That's what He does. That's who He is. A good leader doesn't lead his people astray. They don't let the people under their care walk into danger without warning. They do everything they can to instruct and teach them to walk in better and more successful ways. And our God is the perfect and most powerful authority we could possibly submit ourselves to, and he's done just that for us. So we're gonna read one of those passages together today and see what God says will lead us to a life of wisdom rather than living in foolishness. So let's turn to the book of Psalms where we're going to read the very first one. So Psalm 1, and what you're going to see here is that wisdom comes when we truly know God and allow Him to shape the way we live our lives. And that's the sermon today. That's the big takeaway, if nothing else.

    06:09-07:13

that wisdom comes when we truly know God and allow him to shape the way we live our lives. So let's read. "Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He's that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither, and all that he does he prospers. The wicked are not so, but they are like the chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of lays out four different ways that we can live to gain godly wisdom in this life.

    07:14-07:18

And the first comes by not setting yourself up for failure.

    07:19-07:24

So on our outlines, wisdom comes when we rise above worldly influence.

    07:26-07:40

I don't know about you, but every time Christmas comes around, I always get suckered into at least half an hour, 45 minutes of the movie that's on constantly on TV.

    07:40-08:43

There's a marathon of it from Christmas Eve into Christmas, I think it is, the Christmas story. Anybody else get sucked into that? Just for a little bit. And every time I watch it, I know it's coming, but I always feel for my man Flick. Is that his name, Flick? The kid who puts his tongue on the pole? Because Flick is, I right? And his friends are around him and they don't really care about his well-being, right? They triple dog dare him into doing it. They just want to see something cool. You can't go against a triple dog dare. And they didn't care what happened to Flick's tongue. And he was subject to the influence of his friends around him. And maybe in a more serious note, you know somebody that you grew up with, who you were friends for a while, and maybe as you got older they started hanging out with a different crowd, and then years down the road they're doing things and saying things that they hadn't done before.

    08:45-08:50

And you could tell that they were most definitely influenced by the people that they had been spending time with.

    08:52-09:48

I think that scenario is what the psalm addresses in this first verse, where it says, "Blessed as the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked nor stands in the way of sinners nor sits in the seat of scoffers." And this isn't the only place in Scripture where we're warned about the people we associate ourselves with. One other one that might come to mind for you is 1st Corinthians 15 33 where we're told that bad company corrects good—corrupts, excuse me, corrupts good character, definitely not corrects, corrupts it. Who you surround yourself with matters. Who you look to for advice and try to emulate matters. Who you choose to be influenced by matters. You might not think that or think you can rise above some of the nonsense that you willingly subject yourself to, but it It makes an impact.

    09:50-09:52

I mean, the concept is really simple.

    09:53-10:00

If you are choosing to surround yourself with those who don't know God, they're going to act like someone who doesn't know God, right?

    10:01-10:04

They're going to choose sinful ways of thinking and acting.

    10:06-10:22

And you might be able to recognize sometimes when they're doing things or saying things that aren't glorifying to God, but are you always going to catch that before you start anticipate, or before those things creep into your mind as well.

    10:25-10:28

Influence can be a dangerous and powerful thing.

    10:29-10:33

And make no mistake, as human beings, we are subject to influence.

    10:34-10:51

That's why there are people literally called influencers out there on social media now that are supposed to convince you to live the way they are living, buy the things they're "Fine, do what I'm doing." What if you spend more time around those who scoff at the Lord?

    10:53-10:56

Do you know what we mean here by scoffing, by the way?

    10:58-11:03

That's that person that gives that sarcastic chuckle, like, "Oh, God, okay.

    11:05-11:05

    "Yeah, whatever.

    11:07-11:08

"Yeah, you believe in God, cool.

    11:10-11:12

    "Haven't seen Him around lately.

    11:13-11:16

I'm not going to let the big man upstairs tell me how to live.

    11:17-11:23

You know, Jesus, who supposedly lived thousands of years ago, yeah, OK, keep believing he was real.

    11:25-11:26

They talk about him in the Bible.

    11:26-11:28

Yeah, that book of fairy tales, sure.

    11:30-11:32

And you think some invisible God is in control.

    11:33-11:35

No, I control my own life.

    11:36-11:38

I can decide what's right and wrong.

    11:41-11:44

Are you getting your life advice from people who say those things?

    11:46-11:48

Are you under that kind of influence?

    11:50-11:55

If you spend more time with them than quiet time alone with the Lord, what do you think's gonna win out in your mind?

    11:57-11:59

And maybe more importantly, in your heart.

    12:01-12:06

In Luke chapter six, we're told that what you store up in your heart, that's what you're going to produce.

    12:07-12:09

The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

    12:10-12:15

If you're feeding your heart things that aren't of God, that's what your life is gonna produce.

    12:16-12:21

Now, I wanna make an important distinction here for what this verse in Psalms is not saying.

    12:22-12:33

And this verse is not saying that we should avoid anyone who doesn't believe in God or walk with God at all times because we can't afford to spend a single minute being around them because of their potential influence.

    12:35-12:37

No, that is ridiculous and really it's virtually impossible.

    12:38-12:40

And that's not how Jesus lived on earth either.

    12:40-13:02

I mean, he chose to surround himself with sinners, with some of the most hated in society at the time, the unclean, because he was bringing them the good news of his coming, of a kingdom that they could soon be part of because he was going to do what he was going to do at the cross, to take away the sins of those who believe in him.

    13:02-13:10

So if we don't spend time and have meaningful relationships and conversations with non-believers, and how are we ever gonna reach the lost?

    13:11-13:13

How are we to share the good news of Jesus with them?

    13:14-13:21

So this is not saying avoid them always, but the difference in verse one is pointing out the actions and the heart.

    13:22-13:37

And there's a huge difference between spending time with people to love them and ultimately bring them to Christ and walking with the wicked, standing with the sinners, sitting with the scoffers, that it's talking about here.

    13:37-15:28

choosing them over God. And I also want to point out the the progression of the verbs here. Do you catch that at all? Where we go from walking to standing to sitting. And do you notice what's happening here? This is a this is a settling down. It's more and more of an acceptance of that lifestyle. And by the you're sitting, you've settled in to that life of sin with the scoffers and the wicked, you've allowed yourself to get comfortable, and you're not planning to go anywhere anytime soon if you're sitting down, right? I mean, you guys all came in here and you sat down in these chairs because you weren't expecting to go anywhere for the next 20-25 minutes, right? Hopefully you don't get up and leave, but you know, at least you were planning to stick around for the whole thing. And that's the picture here. This is what God is warning us to avoid. I also think of when you're sitting at a beach and you're in your little beach chair and you're right by the water line. Maybe you have a book in your hand and the chair is always uncomfortably low for me because if a big wave comes then it's a big mess basically. But as you sit there and more of those waves come in off the shore and go underneath your chair, don't you kind of feel yourself sinking into the sand? And then eventually, by the time you get up half an hour later or whatever, you've got to really almost yank your chair out of that sand. Don't let it get to that point with your life of sin and what you're indulging yourself in and the what things that that you're surrounding yourself with.

    15:30-15:41

It says, "Blessed are those who avoid that." And so as we're in prayer month here at Harvest, be praying, God, show me the areas where I allow myself to be influenced against you.

    15:42-15:48

God, give me the eyes to see the people I allow myself to act like that aren't acting in ways that represent you.

    15:49-15:56

Show me where I might be standing in the ways that sinners stand and help me recognize the times and repent of them.

    15:56-16:06

because that's not how wise followers of Christ live. So it is unwise to willingly subject yourself to sinful ways and certainly unwise to adopt them.

    16:07-16:36

So what should you do then? How should you be spending your time? Well, point two in our outlines, wisdom comes when we rightly interact with God's Word. Verse two says, "But as the light is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. And this is critically important, so I want to be as clear and simple and direct as possible here, and I will start by asking you this question.

    16:38-17:50

And that is, how do you view this book? I mean, really, deep down inside, when you see the Bible, what is your honest view of it? Do you truly believe that this book is written by God himself? That yes, it was written through people, of course, many of them over history, but they were divinely inspired to write every single word in here? That each verse is God speaking through them? I mean, really think about that, because it doesn't matter what the person next to you thinks. It doesn't matter what your friends think, your family thinks. It matters what you think. I mean, what do you think that that is? The Lord tells us that the Bible was inspired by God every bit. And but for a while there'd be somebody holding up the John 3:16 sign somewhere in the camera view.

    17:51-18:01

Probably the most famous verse in the Bible because it tells us that God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

    18:01-18:04

It's the gospel, really. It's wrapped up in one verse.

    18:06-18:14

But I feel like after you've heard that verse and you've applied that verse and memorized it, that there's another 3:16 that might be next for you.

    18:14-18:47

And that's 2nd Timothy 3 16 It says all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine for reproof for correction for instruction and righteousness So if you believe that it's all God breathed and it's literally how God speaks to us We can hear from him always guaranteed 100% Do you treat it that way Do you really treat it that way?

    18:50-18:58

And man, as I say that out loud, I am convicted because I don't think that I have that kind of reverence all the time that I pick up my Bible.

    19:00-19:04

I don't realize the magnitude of what I'm holding in my hands, what we've been gifted with.

    19:07-19:12

And what the psalmist is saying here actually goes beyond just what I'm calling for and just reading it and treating it for what it is.

    19:13-19:18

The psalmist says the person who delights in the Lord and in the Word is blessed.

    19:19-19:22

And so I ask you this question, do you delight in the Word?

    19:24-19:29

Like do you find delight in life merely by just being able to pick up and read these words?

    19:30-19:35

And man, that's convicting for me too, because I know that I don't always do that.

    19:36-19:39

I don't always find delight in my life just because I can read the Word.

    19:42-19:45

And then not only should we delight in it, but we should also be meditating on it.

    19:46-19:47

    Now what does that mean?

    19:48-19:53

You know, should we be crossing our legs and doing some pretzel-style hum kind of thing?

    19:54-19:59

Now actually it's funny, in other religions meditating is to kind of empty your mind, right?

    20:00-20:03

But here meditating is the exact opposite.

    20:04-20:09

It is filling your mind with the Word of God as much as you possibly can.

    20:09-21:01

conscious effort to do that and to understand what God is saying to you. And if you happen to be going through the Fundamentals of the Faith book by John MacArthur here at Harvest, or maybe you've read it before or you're doing it at home or whatever, he gives the definition for what that means. He says, "Meditation is prayerful reflection on Scripture with a view toward understanding and application. So meditating involves praying about what you read, hearing it, applying it, and then memorizing it. You know the point is that meditating on the word goes far beyond just reading it once and then forgetting about it two minutes later, or just getting through that last section of that chapter just to say that you read that chapter for the day, and then and checking it off your to-do list.

    21:02-21:05

Now, meditating on God's word requires some work.

    21:07-21:09

It requires some sharp focus and attention.

    21:10-21:20

And it can look like reading that same section or that verse multiple times in your head and then maybe reading it out loud so you can actually hear the words and understand them.

    21:21-21:32

It could look like marking up your Bible with underlines and notes and highlights, and I know a lot of people that do that, just to try to unpack as much as you can from what you're reading.

    21:35-21:36

And it also should involve prayer.

    21:37-21:44

It's asking God to help you view your day by the truth you just read, or maybe for an opportunity to apply what you read that day.

    21:46-21:50

Now, prayer is an important part of meditating on God's word, and it should go hand in hand.

    21:53-22:01

And so what happens when we do this and we make it a habit, that we delight, that we meditate on God's word, what happens next?

    22:02-22:03

    Let's look at verse three.

    22:04-22:21

It says, "He is a tree planted by streams of water "that yields its fruit in its season "and its leaf does not wither, "and all that he does, he prospers." And we went over earlier about how we can become seated and comfortable in living in worldly ways.

    22:22-23:11

And this is saying that the one who delights in God's word and meditates on it will be like a tree planted by streams of water. A tree has deep roots to keep it right where it's planted. A healthy tree is constantly nourished to keep those roots strong. So the psalmist is clearly talking about a healthy tree by saying it bears its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. And so the picture here is that God's Word provides a never-failing and ever-flowing source of nourishment and refreshment for our souls. That when our lives are deeply embedded into His Word, He sustains us. He gives us healthy life. And that's where you want to be rooted.

    23:12-23:25

That's where the Lord wants us to be rooted. And let's not get tripped up on the phrase "everything He does prospers" either, because this is not some prosperity gospel phrase.

    23:25-23:30

This is not saying, "Hey, everything that you do will be successful.

    23:30-23:36

You're going to get all the money, cars, houses you could ever want." This is not about health and wealth.

    23:37-23:40

Now, this goes far beyond those material things.

    23:41-23:43

    This is about spiritual prosperity.

    23:44-23:49

This is finding true soul satisfaction because you're living how God designed you to live.

    23:51-23:54

You're living according to the Holy Spirit who's inside of you.

    23:55-24:01

calling you to a life that glorifies and honors the Father and brings people to Christ.

    24:02-24:04

That's what real prospering is like.

    24:06-24:09

It's wise to rightly interact with God's Word.

    24:12-24:13

But what happens if we don't?

    24:15-24:17

    Well, back to the outlines.

    24:18-24:22

Wisdom also comes when we recognize the alternative.

    24:24-24:28

4 says, "The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff that the wind drives away.

    24:30-24:58

Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous." So the psalmist goes back to the wicked here and says, "They're gonna be like the chaff in the wind." Now what are they talking about here? What's the chaff? Well this comes from the old process of threshing and winnowing grain husks. So you'd have the grain, then you'd have the chaff, and And they would oftentimes, to separate the two, they would kind of just throw it up in the air.

    24:59-25:03

And the grain is what would have substance, and so it would fall to the ground.

    25:04-25:09

Then the chaff, the useless stuff, the weightless stuff, would just kind of float away.

    25:12-25:19

And so going back to the tree that's watered by God's Word and rooted in His righteousness and bears fruit, it isn't going anywhere.

    25:19-25:21

The useful grain would fall to the ground.

    25:21-25:22

    It wasn't going anywhere.

    25:23-25:26

It had weight to it. It was useful. It had substance.

    25:27-25:37

But the chaff, the wicked, the sinful, the one opposed to God, it just lifelessly blows away.

    25:39-25:41

The chaff, it's weak, it's weightless.

    25:42-25:43

    That's the alternative.

    25:45-25:47

    A life without real meaning.

    25:48-25:50

    A life without clear direction.

    25:51-26:00

Right? I mean, that shaft could land right here, or the wind could pick it up and blow it a mile down the road, or it could put it in a bush somewhere.

    26:01-26:04

Who knows where it would end up? It's not rooted in anything.

    26:05-26:19

So when the strong winds of change, or heartache, or tragedy, or adversity, a temptation come into them, they're just blown about. Instead of being anchored down, they blow away.

    26:22-26:25

And does that sound like any wise way to live?

    26:26-26:31

Just being a victim of the circumstances, basically, as you go through life.

    26:32-26:41

And what's even more metaphorical here is that oftentimes what would happen to the chap afterwards, if it didn't blow miles away, if they still had it, it would be burned up.

    26:43-26:54

And that's a pretty gruesome and sobering reality of what a life without accepting the free gift of salvation in Jesus Christ results to in the end on Judgment Day.

    26:56-26:57

    That's the alternative.

    27:00-27:08

That's what's in store for the wicked who reject God, make fun of Him, scoff at Him, want nothing to do with Him.

    27:09-27:16

So as you focus on your prayer life this month, pray for those who are on this path, who are living this life.

    27:18-27:34

Pray for opportunities to share with them the freedom, the peace, the eternal security that comes when they accept Jesus who laid down His life for them on that cross, so that their sins could be taken away and they could live far beyond this short life here on earth.

    27:37-27:44

And finally, wisdom comes into our lives when we rightly walk with God.

    27:45-27:46

    Let's look at verse six.

    27:49-28:00

"For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish." And I just mentioned it, the way of the wicked ultimately results in death.

    28:02-28:07

And by that I mean eternal death, or as the Bible references it elsewhere, the second death.

    28:09-28:12

But yet on the other side, the Lord knows the way of the righteous.

    28:13-28:14

    He knows.

    28:14-28:16

    You're not fooling Him.

    28:18-28:21

He knows who's really living for Him and who's not.

    28:22-28:23

    God isn't mocked.

    28:24-28:25

    He can't be hoodwinked.

    28:26-28:28

    He can't be slyly deceived.

    28:29-28:30

    He knows.

    28:32-29:00

Luke 16, 15 says, "And He," Jesus, "said to them, 'You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.'" Jeremiah 17 10 says, "The Lord searches the heart and tests the mind to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds." So God knows who his children are, and that should give us great comfort.

    29:02-29:10

Because when we are walking in righteousness, when we are that tree that's planted by streams of water, we're well taken care of.

    29:12-29:16

Other interpretations of verse six say he watches over the way of the righteous.

    29:18-29:32

And if we're truly living for him, we're daily giving our lives over to him and have accepted his salvation, he's promised to never leave us or forsake us.

    29:34-29:40

He's ever present in our times of struggle and whenever we run into troubles in this life.

    29:41-29:51

Our Lord took human form in Jesus, so He knows in intimate detail about the ups and downs of life on this earth.

    29:52-29:53

    He understands it.

    29:55-29:57

And He's there with us, He's watching over.

    30:00-30:07

And like the good shepherd watching over His flock, He's guiding, He's protecting, He's leading us into a life of wisdom.

    30:08-30:18

And there is awesome comfort in there, they're not. Who better to know the paths laid out before our life than a God like that?

    30:21-30:24

And so, as I close things out, I'll ask you one more question.

    30:26-30:43

If wisdom is something that God wants for us and is something that will bless us, and those in our care, those around us, those who we love will be blessed by that as well, If all of these things are true, do you ask for wisdom?

    30:47-31:12

Because God calls us to. James 1 5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it'll be given to you." And that is, as clear as day, our Lord inviting us to ask for His wisdom, and He is not going to hold back from it.

    31:14-31:19

If you ask with a genuine heart and honestly seek Him, that's where we find wisdom.

    31:21-31:25

And that is definitely worth incorporating into your prayer life this month too, isn't it?

    31:28-31:46

And I'll close by saying that Psalm 1 shows us that when we know God, and when we truly know what He has written down for us, when we truly seek the truth and seek guidance for our lives by seeing what He says, we're going to find wisdom.

    31:48-31:49

    Meditating on His Word.

    31:50-31:52

Delighting to meditate on His Word.

    31:54-31:55

    That's where we find wisdom.

    31:56-32:07

know to avoid the influence of bad company, will recognize the alternatives of what life is like without Christ, and will walk in righteousness with Him.

    32:09-32:22

We're going to be those trees that are planted by the streams of water, forever satisfied, spiritually healthy, bearing the fruit that He wants us to as His people.

    32:24-32:31

comes when we truly know God and allow Him to shape the way that we live our lives.

    32:33-32:33

    Let's pray.

    32:37-32:41

Father God, I thank You for Psalm 1, Lord.

    32:41-32:51

I thank You for Your Word, that You give us Your Word to learn from, God, to study for all of our days, Lord.

    32:52-33:03

It doesn't matter how many times that we've read over the same things, God, we can always find new things, Lord, that can hit us in different ways in whatever we're going through.

    33:05-33:15

And Lord, I pray in the times that we're struggling, and even in the times when things are going really well, that we would always be seeking wisdom through you, Lord.

    33:16-33:21

That we would be spending that time rightly interacting with your Word.

    33:21-33:49

We would recognize what the alternative is to a life that isn't full of your wisdom Lord Where we go into those traps where we hurt ourselves and hurt others And I pray that we would be committed to seeking that wisdom and God we'd be spending that time Praying to you as well to help us with that To reveal what you have in your will for our lives And I pray this all in Jesus's name.

  2. Is there a habit or an area of your life that might be holding you back from living to gain wisdom?

  3. Do you humbly and genuinely ask God for wisdom? If you do or have, in what ways have you seen Him "give generously" to you (James 1:5)?

  4. Is there a particular method of "meditation" that works for you to help you fully comprehend and absorb what God is saying to you through Scripture? Is there any method you'd like to try to implement?

  • 01:07-01:12

So one of the core pillars at Harvest is believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    01:12-01:19

I think this is pretty evident by the way our order of service is conducted and the focus that we've been emphasizing at church.

    01:20-01:35

Prayer happens during worship, after worship, before the sermon, after the sermon, and if you haven't prayed enough, there's always the prayer team in the back that you can go to during the closing worship and even go to them after service has concluded.

    01:36-01:39

Prayer is woven throughout our church.

    01:40-01:48

The commonality across all of our prayers comes from the teachings that Jesus gave in Luke 11 and Matthew 6.

    01:49-01:55

That scripture commonly referred to as the Lord's Prayer is where Jesus teaches us how to pray.

    01:56-02:04

Not as a verbatim recite this, but as a template for addressing God in areas to cover in our prayers.

    02:05-02:37

And one of the first thing Jesus teaches us to do is to recognize and praise the Lord in our prayers And that's what we're going to be focusing on today praising the Lord in our prayers Now like any other commandment from God Praising has a level of difficulty involved But by difficulty, I mean our willingness to do it See, our willingness to God can be represented by a scale that goes from easy to hard.

    02:38-02:45

A sliding scale, to be precise, and in my opinion, one of the best ways to frame a small group discussion question.

    02:47-02:57

To help explain this, I want to use the whiteboard to plot an ease of praise scale out and provide some example situations that we might find ourselves in.

    02:58-03:00

We'll put easy on the bottom, we'll have hard on the top.

    03:01-03:05

And easy would be like you're bursting at the seams.

    03:05-03:09

You are, praise is forefront of mind and you're just eager to get at it.

    03:10-03:12

    And hard, the complete opposite.

    03:12-03:17

Things are going bad, it's the last thing on your mind and you just want the day to be over with.

    03:18-03:23

So we'll chart these examples and then we'll see whether or not you'd be praising God.

    03:24-03:25

    Everyone with me so far?

    03:25-03:26

    Okay.

    03:27-03:31

So using everything I learned from Emeril Lagasse and daytime television cooking.

    03:33-03:35

Oh man, I did it upside down.

    03:36-03:36

    Oh no.

    03:41-03:42

    Well.

    03:47-03:50

See, they even have little mess ups.

    03:52-03:53

    We'll just ignore that.

    03:54-03:56

Let's get to these examples, right?

    03:57-04:02

So the first one is you are accepted into your dream college.

    04:03-04:09

Well I would say that's a pretty easy situation to be in and plot that down there.

    04:11-04:14

And yeah, I would say in that case you'd definitely be praising God.

    04:16-04:19

The next one, a fender bender.

    04:20-04:25

I mean, it's not like you had a major accident, but that's kind of a hard situation.

    04:25-04:26

    You gotta deal with insurance.

    04:28-04:29

    We'll plot that right there.

    04:30-04:34

And to me, I don't know, I can't see that you would be praising God there.

    04:36-04:42

The next one is the Steelers won, but you got acid reflux from the wings.

    04:44-04:50

Well, everyone here seems to take their football pretty seriously, so yeah, That's still a nice situation to be in.

    04:51-04:54

And despite the wings, yeah, you're gonna be praising God.

    04:57-04:58

    Lost your job.

    04:59-05:00

    That's a tough situation.

    05:00-05:04

A situation that many people went through over the past couple of years with COVID.

    05:06-05:15

Yeah, that's not something I think anybody wants to be in and is definitely not an area where I think people would be praising God.

    05:17-05:20

And last one, a new haircut.

    05:21-05:25

Kind of a random thing, but something we might have.

    05:27-05:28

I don't know, is it middle, right?

    05:28-05:29

    It's somewhere right here.

    05:32-05:33

And would you be praising God?

    05:33-05:40

I guess if you went in with bad expectations and everything turned out well, sure, let's say you're praising God.

    05:42-05:53

So looking at this chart or this scale, we should be able to draw a line to say, depending on how hard your situation or easy it is, you'd be praising God.

    05:53-05:56

    So kind of right here.

    05:57-06:04

So if you're down here where it's easy, you'd be praising, and if you're up here where it's hard, you won't.

    06:05-06:06

And that's how that works, right?

    06:12-06:13

    What about Paul and Silas?

    06:14-06:21

In the book of Acts, they were imprisoned, and they were in shackles on walls, and scripture says that they were praising the Lord.

    06:23-06:25

So they were up here, but they were praising.

    06:27-06:30

And there's the example in the Old Testament of Belshazzar.

    06:30-06:33

He's the king of Babylon, and he had an easy life.

    06:33-06:44

He had command over hundreds of thousands, if not millions, and he knew about God from Nebuchadnezzar, but he instead decided to praise idols of silver and gold and other material things.

    06:45-06:48

So he's down here, and he's not praising.

    06:50-06:58

And Job, we can't forget about Job. I mean, he's like way off the chart, but he still chose to praise God.

    07:00-07:03

Well, this example is falling apart right before our eyes, huh?

    07:05-07:44

So what am I missing here? Right? What am I not considering on this on this scale? I Mean, obviously this is a loaded question because if I didn't know the answer and just walked off it'd be really awkward for this sermon But it's your heart right? It's your intentionality to praise God despite your situation Right. We cannot look at our situation alone or let our situation determine whether or not we praise God. I and influence our willingness to praise God, but to make a sweeping statement that if you're up here or down there that you will or you won't be praising God is just absurd, right?

    07:44-07:54

We have examples throughout scripture that show examples of folks praising in hard situations and forgetting God when things are going well.

    07:55-08:03

So what we wanna do today is use Psalm 96 to extract truth that will help us in our prayer life, specifically with praise.

    08:04-08:19

And my hope is that these points will bring new insight into how we can praise, what we can praise God for, and who we can praise God with, so that no matter what's going on, we can boldly and intentionally praise.

    08:20-08:26

So today we'll go over four points gleaned from our passage to help bolster praise in our prayer life.

    08:27-08:32

And we'll start with point one, praise the Lord with freshness.

    08:33-08:35

And this is gonna be in verses one through three.

    08:38-08:40

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song.

    08:40-08:42

Sing to the Lord all the earth.

    08:42-08:44

Sing to the Lord, bless his name.

    08:44-08:46

Tell of his salvation from day to day.

    08:47-08:52

Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples.

    08:56-08:59

This first verse in Psalm 96 comes out swinging, right?

    08:59-09:01

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song.

    09:01-09:05

This command has huge implications in our prayer life.

    09:06-09:10

The idea of singing a new song means that we praise God with freshness.

    09:11-09:15

If you have that go-to prayer when you praise God, get that out of here.

    09:16-09:20

It's time to retire your greatest hits and go for something new, something fresh.

    09:21-09:26

God is unchanging, yes, but the things and the ways He's moving in our lives is always new.

    09:27-09:28

    So sing a new song.

    09:30-09:32

Well, you might ask, how do we come up with these new songs?

    09:33-09:39

Well, verses two and three give us some practical ways in how we can formulate new praise and stay fresh.

    09:40-09:53

Verse two again, "Sing to the Lord, bless his name, tell of his salvation from day to day." Now, I don't know about you all, but whenever I became saved, God still kept working in my life.

    09:54-09:57

It's not like I accepted Jesus and then he was done with me.

    09:57-09:58

    Things just stopped happening.

    09:59-10:04

His salvation through his son, Jesus Christ, is constantly being put into focus in my life.

    10:06-10:14

It might be apparent in answered prayer, my provision, or a refinement in my character when I go through trials and difficulties.

    10:15-10:22

But I know that the process of my sanctification is ongoing, constant, and never will be finished.

    10:24-10:40

So how can I or anyone else who has accepted Jesus say, "Eh, I don't really have anything new I can praise God about." I mean, we all have times we act like that kid coming home from school or summer camp, giving our parents those one-word answers.

    10:41-10:42

I'm sure you all know the scenarios.

    10:44-10:56

Mom asks, "Well, how'd things go?" "Good." Then Dad asks, "Well, what'd you do?" "Stuff." And now that I'm a parent, I'm on the receiving end of that.

    10:58-11:05

But hypothetically, we go through that situation every day in our lives between us and God.

    11:06-11:07

    So are you praising God?

    11:09-11:12

Are you giving God those one word praise answers?

    11:12-11:18

You just praising him for all the good things and thanking him for all the stuff he does in your life?

    11:20-11:32

Or are you praising God fully and explicitly for all he does, no matter how major or minor, from a promotion to a perfect parking spot, or from a renewed relationship to a repaired road.

    11:34-11:42

I don't know why I'm dwelling on asphalt examples right now, but I'm sure we can all raise a hallelujah when a road construction project finishes around here.

    11:44-11:45

    Yeah, that's true.

    11:45-11:46

    I haven't seen one yet.

    11:48-11:48

    Just kidding.

    11:49-11:58

But to be fair, and as mentioned earlier, The ability for us to see that, to see that newness, can be clouded by our situations.

    11:59-12:03

Right, Job, Paul, Silas, I mean, these were extraordinary men.

    12:03-12:12

And I personally don't have the fortitude or the perseverance to find something new to praise God for when things are going so wrong.

    12:13-12:19

I get it, I understand, but it does not excuse us from praising God with freshness.

    12:20-12:39

Right, verse three, again, "Declare His glory among the nations, His marvelous works among all the peoples." This verse is telling us that when things aren't going so well, we always have the ability to look back on His marvelous works, to praise God for what He's already done.

    12:40-12:53

Now, you might think that this is like a glass half full type of mentality, but when you are in the weeds of trials, Sometimes you just need to cling too tightly to what God has done.

    12:54-13:01

That way you can anticipate what God will do and praise him again for that eventual deliverance.

    13:03-13:08

And that's probably the most challenging aspect of praising with freshness, right?

    13:08-13:13

When things are going well, you kind of know what you're gonna praise God for, right?

    13:13-13:18

It's front of mind, probably easy to recall, you're probably in a good mood.

    13:19-13:31

But when things are bad and you're needing to look back and declare what God has done for you, to declare those marvelous works, you're probably battling emotional fatigue, stress, and you just might not be up for it.

    13:32-13:40

But I would encourage you though to find something, even if it's just one of those minor things, to praise the Lord in your prayers.

    13:41-13:50

Could be again, the past answered prayer, your provision you received that day, a friendly conversation you had, or even just a stranger showing concern for you.

    13:51-13:53

Take that time to praise the Lord.

    13:55-14:13

I can't explain it, but when I'm just so focused on the God help me, and I'm just ready to tear into my petitions and my prayers, but instead I stop, slow down, and instead take a few moments to praise God, it just helps, right?

    14:13-14:17

That anger or bitterness that I would have carried into my prayers lifts.

    14:18-14:27

Maybe not entirely, but my mind and the direction of my prayer takes a proper path that is so much more fulfilling and intentional.

    14:29-14:32

So in your prayers, let's praise with freshness.

    14:32-14:34

    We all have reasons to.

    14:36-14:42

But let's not only praise in that way, because we can also praise with assurance, which is our next point.

    14:43-14:46

    Praise the Lord with assurance.

    14:46-14:48

This is in verses four through six.

    14:50-14:53

For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

    14:53-15:01

He is to be feared above all gods, for all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

    15:02-15:03

Splendor and majesty are before him.

    15:04-15:06

Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

    15:09-15:15

Now, did you know that when you praise God, you are praising the pinnacle subject in all of existence.

    15:16-15:24

There is no person, object, idea, or concept that comes anywhere close to deserving of praise as our God does.

    15:25-15:35

We have full assurance or confidence that our praise is heard and is given to someone who cares more deeply for us than any parent, sibling, or spouse.

    15:36-15:45

Now, the Bible doesn't forbid us from praising others, But when we praise others more than we praise Him, that's when problems arise.

    15:46-15:49

After all, the source of all goodness comes from God.

    15:49-15:52

So to cut Him out of that equation is foolish.

    15:52-15:56

And if you're doing that intentionally, I would say blasphemous.

    15:57-15:59

    See, God has no substitute.

    15:59-16:01

Verses four and five make that clear.

    16:02-16:07

You might read the last part of verse four, the He is to be feared above all gods.

    16:08-16:16

And it makes it seem like there might actually gods, like minor gods, stuff like you might hear in Greek and Roman mythology.

    16:17-16:23

But that's not the case, because immediately it's followed up with saying that those gods are worthless idols.

    16:24-16:25

    They hold no power.

    16:25-16:27

    They aren't even real.

    16:28-16:32

They're decorations, pieces of wood, only useful to be burned for warmth.

    16:33-16:36

Idols are not deserving of praise.

    16:38-16:40

But how often do we get caught up in fashioning them?

    16:41-16:44

Fashioning little idols that take away our praise from God.

    16:45-16:54

I mean, maybe we don't do it intentionally as believers in Christ, but praising everything other than God seems to be an ever-growing trend.

    16:55-17:03

We live in the era of social media and the "me" focus, and that culture can rub off on you and direct your praise elsewhere.

    17:05-17:10

However, rest assured that we have no assurance in praising anything other than God.

    17:12-17:16

To help you with an example I see often, I'm part of the millennial generation.

    17:17-17:18

    Sorry, up front.

    17:20-17:23

So I go on YouTube and Twitch a lot.

    17:24-17:31

These are social media platforms for video and streaming, and people over the years have made entire careers on them.

    17:32-18:05

gained a bunch of subscribers and followers. And like other platforms, you know, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, you can interact with these content creators either live or through posted comments. And I can imagine the praises that these creators receive would be encouraging for them, but there are folks that put them on a pedestal and pour their hearts and souls out to them. It's ultimately sad to see that their assurance is in someone that they have no real relationship with.

    18:06-18:16

Because even the most well-intentioned content creator cannot listen to, hear, recognize, or address all the interactions that they receive.

    18:17-18:22

A majority of the praise just falls on deaf ears or is lost into cyberspace.

    18:23-18:29

And I've also seen videos where creators will react to fan art submissions, things that that people will give them.

    18:30-18:40

And they'll read the comment, they'll be like, "Oh man, I spent 700 hours on this drawing." And they'll go, "Wow, this is really great, yeah, yeah." On to the next thing.

    18:42-18:47

The point I'm trying to make with this is that God is not like that at all.

    18:48-18:51

He hears all of our praise and delights in all of it as well.

    18:53-19:01

Psalm 149, verses three through four says, Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre.

    19:01-19:12

For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation." God hears and takes pleasure in our praise. Have assurance in that.

    19:15-19:21

But maybe you aren't yet sold on praising with assurance. Well, we have verses 5 and 6 now.

    19:22-19:28

These verses speak truth about how God made the heavens and has splendor and majesty before him.

    19:30-19:53

Creation is a beautiful thing, right? We get to experience it every day, but sometimes the greatness of God can be lost on you. So when you pray, though, how often do you take time to reflect on how big God is, to set the stage that you're coming before the almighty creator of the heavens in the universe.

    19:54-19:56

Everything we see around us, it's his.

    19:57-20:02

Something as small as a caterpillar turning into a butterfly, that's his.

    20:03-20:08

You see a beautiful sunset lighting up the atmosphere like a painting, that's his.

    20:09-20:17

You see a photograph of a distant galaxy from a James Webb telescope in outer space, that's his.

    20:18-20:25

God has the ultimate resume of accomplishments, and he still has plans for us, grand plans to be fulfilled when Christ returns.

    20:26-20:31

He's the only one that can do it. So praise with assurance in him.

    20:34-20:48

So we ought to praise with freshness, praise with assurance. For our third point, I'm going to take a little bit of a detour from "how" to "who" with "Praise the Lord with community" verses 7 through 10.

    20:51-21:01

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples. Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name. Bring an offering and come into his courts.

    21:02-21:04

Worship the Lord in in the splendor of holiness.

    21:05-21:13

Tremble before him all the earth. Say among the nations, "The Lord reigns. Yes, the world is established. It shall never be moved.

    21:13-21:25

he will judge the peoples with equity." In these verses, we have a sense of a gathering of believers to come and praise the Lord.

    21:26-21:54

Verses 7 and 8 continue with praise to God and the truth that we need to ascribe or attribute glory and strength to his name, verses 9 to revere him, and verses 10 to declare his unchanging righteousness. I mean, all of these are wonderful aspects of God that we ought to praise him for, And I don't want to take away from that part of the psalm, but I do want to focus on the language of plurality and the sense of people coming together to praise.

    21:55-21:59

Families of the people, all the earth, say among the nations.

    22:00-22:06

Right? This is verbiage that is giving a sense of prayer, communal prayer.

    22:07-22:10

So what does this mean for our prayer life?

    22:11-22:27

Well, it's that we ought to make our praise and our prayers among believers Now hold on you might think about you know, matthew 6 where jesus talks about the hypocrites who stand In the and pray in the synagogues in the street corners, right?

    22:28-22:48

But understand that those folks Jesus was talking about there were seeking to glorify themselves to bring attention to themselves and glory to themselves Right the look how spiritual I am. Look how all these words i'm heaping up to god But that's not what I'm talking about here, because the focus of our praise is to draw attention to God, not us.

    22:48-22:50

Just wanted to be clear with that.

    22:52-22:59

But for those that have been around Harvest for a while, periodically, we'll get into prayer groups before the sermon and pray together.

    23:00-23:05

Now, I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I for one, I actually really enjoy it.

    23:06-23:13

You know, there's an opportunity to meet new people, But more importantly, there's an opportunity to share our praise.

    23:14-23:17

And this isn't announced ahead of time, you know, unless you're on staff.

    23:18-23:23

So we're all coming into these groups with different situations and things going on in our life.

    23:24-23:27

Right? I mean, we could be up here, dealing with some hard stuff.

    23:27-23:30

We could be down here, dealing with some easy things.

    23:30-23:34

And our group could be all people going through hard things, all people going through easy things.

    23:35-23:36

It could be a mix, right?

    23:38-23:43

So, regardless, we're all coming together to praise the Lord.

    23:45-24:43

And despite what's been going on in my life, something that I try to do during those prayer groups is to focus my prayer time mainly on praising God. The reason being is that I remember others doing that and sharing what God has been doing in their life, and it's just such an encouragement for me, and I'm sure it was an encouragement for the others that were hearing it as well. I mean, there's nothing wrong in those prayer groups with bringing our petition. I mean, we still need to pray for those things, still need to pray for deliverance and for God to work in our lives, but for me, praise just always hit harder and had a much more lasting impact, because I got to see God move outside of my individual life and instead in the lives of others. I mean that is such a wonderful testimony of God's faithfulness throughout all believers.

    24:45-25:32

And honestly that might be the pick-me-up that you need to refocus your personal prayer life so that you again can gain assurance and praise with freshness as we mentioned earlier. You know even if you aren't able to gather, maybe you're sick, staying home, watching the stream, you still belong to a church body. You know, you're not the only fish in the sea, so that you still need to praise communally. Praise God for what He's done with others. This probably is in front of mind when you pray, right, to pray for others and what God has done in their lives, but I would encourage you to focus your praise on on those marvelous works and deeds that God has done for others.

    25:33-25:42

You know, my own kids have even humbled me more than once when they brought up others in their prayers instead of themselves when we pray at night.

    25:44-25:48

All that to say it's good to shift the focus from ourselves periodically.

    25:50-26:00

So finally for today, the last way that we can bolster our intentionality of praising in our prayer is to praise the Lord with expectation.

    26:01-26:05

And this is the remainder of Psalm 96, verses 11 through 13.

    26:08-26:10

Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice.

    26:11-26:13

Let the sea roar and all that fills it.

    26:13-26:15

Let the field exult and everything in it.

    26:16-26:21

Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy before the Lord for he comes.

    26:22-26:23

For he comes to judge the earth.

    26:24-26:29

He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.

    26:32-26:38

Verses 11 and 12 declare that God's creation is rejoicing in him because they know he is coming.

    26:39-26:50

And as believers, we should share that same sentiment and praise God with the expectation that he will return to judge the earth and do so according to all the promises that he's written throughout scripture.

    26:52-26:56

His truths and promises are certified mail with a tracking number.

    26:56-26:58

you can expect them to arrive.

    27:00-27:04

You know, one of my favorite sayings in recent years is a nothing burger.

    27:05-27:10

And if you don't know what that is, it is a letdown of your expectations.

    27:12-27:19

It's the promise of getting a double Baconator from Wendy's, but when you take it out of the wrapper, all they give you is the top and bottom buns.

    27:20-27:25

There's no meat, there's no cheese, there's no bacon, there's not even any condiments on the bread.

    27:26-27:28

    There's no substance.

    27:29-27:31

It's a complete letdown of your expectations.

    27:33-27:34

    We see this often.

    27:34-27:40

Politicians, celebrities, news media, that's one of their favorite meals to serve, nothing burgers.

    27:41-27:44

It's easy, cheap, and no effort on their part.

    27:45-27:49

But our Lord, our God, He never serves that.

    27:50-27:53

His promises are complete, full, honest, and true.

    27:54-27:59

And like a five-course dinner spread, his promises stretch over all aspects of our lives.

    28:01-28:06

So in our prayer life, praise God with expectation that he will accomplish what he's written.

    28:07-28:14

You know, this can be big picture eternity expectations, or even just expectations in how he's gonna work in our daily lives.

    28:15-28:19

You know, things like he will provide joy, peace, hope, wisdom, steadfastness.

    28:21-28:24

You might be in a situation where it seems hard to praise God.

    28:25-28:26

You're running low on those attributes.

    28:28-28:30

But do you believe that he will provide?

    28:31-28:33

Do you praise him for what he will provide?

    28:35-28:40

You know, so often in our prayers, we praise God retroactively for what he's done.

    28:41-28:43

    Instead, let's change it up.

    28:44-28:47

Let's pray proactively and praise God for what he will do.

    28:49-29:04

Now, not to dwell on the downward spiral what's going on around us, but there are daily news stories about horrific crimes, legislation seeking to undermine God's design, and people openly mocking Christians and our beliefs.

    29:06-29:10

This world has an overall sense of decay and rebellion.

    29:12-29:15

Let me ask you, does this scare you?

    29:17-29:25

I mean, sure, I think what's going on around us is very unsettling, but more importantly, should this scare you?

    29:27-29:29

Not if you believe in Scripture and in Jesus Christ.

    29:30-29:33

You know, the events transpiring around us are to be expected.

    29:35-29:44

You know, Psalm 96 was written before Christ first came, but for us, we have the privilege of knowing that Christ will come yet again.

    29:45-29:47

Now I mentioned earlier that God still has plans for us.

    29:48-29:53

He gave us the book of Revelation that gives us a play by play in how this will happen.

    29:54-29:56

This is prophecy of what will come.

    29:58-30:01

Despite that, Revelation can bring anxiety to Christians.

    30:02-30:05

But I would say that that should not be the case.

    30:06-30:12

Because when he returns and fulfills all that is written, our template for the Lord's Prayer, it's gonna change.

    30:13-30:15

because we're only gonna be left with praising God.

    30:16-30:17

There won't be a need for provision.

    30:18-30:22

God will have accomplished that perfectly in eternity.

    30:23-30:24

And there won't be a need for forgiveness.

    30:25-30:26

Sin just simply ain't gonna exist.

    30:28-30:30

So in the long run, God wins.

    30:31-30:32

    We all know that.

    30:32-30:35

So let's all praise him with expectation.

    30:38-30:49

Now looking back at our ease of praise scale, we should be able to apply these four points to wherever you fall on this scale, to bring you back into the fold, to praise God in your prayers.

    30:51-30:54

If you're down here and things are going well, that's great.

    30:55-31:04

I want you to encourage others in your testimony with how the Lord is working in your life, and I want you to sing a new song when you praise God.

    31:05-31:09

And also, don't forget to praise Him for what God is doing in the lives of others.

    31:11-31:19

But if things aren't going so well, if you're dealing with some tough situations, I want you to lean on praising with assurance and expectation.

    31:20-31:25

God is unfathomably mighty and can accomplish anything.

    31:25-31:27

    Be confident in Him.

    31:28-31:30

His promises are more reliable than Toyotas and taxes.

    31:32-31:33

Expect Him to work in your life.

    31:35-31:38

But no matter where you're at, praise God.

    31:41-31:48

Lord, I want to thank you today for giving me the opportunity to praise you through this sermon.

    31:49-32:17

And Lord, as our church goes through the prayer guide this month, I want to ask you, God, to put on everyone's hearts the idea that we can praise you before our petitions, that There might be some challenging areas that are presented in the prayer guide, but God, you are sovereign, and we don't know your plans, but we know that you will work everything for your will.

    32:19-32:24

And despite our situations, Lord, wherever we fall, we can praise you.

    32:26-32:26

    We thank you, Lord.

    32:27-32:31

Thank you for this time together, and thank you for this church body.

    32:32-32:34

We ask this all in your son Jesus' name.

    32:35-32:35

    Amen.

  • 01:07-01:14

Open with me please to Psalm 73, right in the middle of your Bibles.

    01:15-01:19

This is a Psalm of Asaph.

    01:20-01:21

    Like who is Asaph?

    01:21-01:25

Asaph was actually a worship leader under King David.

    01:26-01:30

    He's responsible for Psalms 73 through 83.

    01:31-01:34

I think Psalm 50 is also attributed to Asaph.

    01:35-01:47

And that's important to know, because we're going to see that even someone whose whole life is about serving God can have a bit of a crisis of faith.

    01:48-01:48

    All right?

    01:50-01:53

So I want you to write some things down today.

    01:54-02:04

First on your outline, wicked, arrogant people seem to prosper, and that really bothers me.

    02:09-02:12

Let's follow Asaph here, Psalm 73.

    02:12-02:19

He says, "Truly, God is good to Israel, "to those who are pure in heart.

    02:22-02:33

"But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled, "my steps had nearly slipped." And we've all been there, let's be honest, we've all been there.

    02:34-02:36

where we're like, look, I know some things about God.

    02:36-02:38

I know that God is good.

    02:38-02:40

I know that God is loving.

    02:41-02:47

I know that in my head, but I, if I'm being honest, there have been times I've almost walked away.

    02:49-02:50

    Anybody else been there?

    02:53-02:57

I know some things, but the things that I feel are different than the things that I know.

    02:58-03:00

Like, well, what was Asaph's problem?

    03:00-03:01

Well, it's all summed up in verse three.

    03:03-03:12

He says, "For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked." Envy.

    03:15-03:20

That's when you compare yourself with someone else in a way that you feel deprived.

    03:21-03:23

And it leads to the bitterness.

    03:25-03:36

And Asaph's problem, he said, "Arrogant, wicked people seem to prosper." Have you ever noticed that?

    03:38-03:39

    Have you ever noticed that?

    03:41-03:47

It isn't, when we say prosper, it's not just about money, right?

    03:47-03:49

And it's not just about stuff.

    03:49-03:51

And it's not just about having great hair.

    03:51-03:55

I mean, it is those things, but it's so much more than that.

    03:55-04:02

It's people that are put, wicked, arrogant people that are put in positions of power and positions of authority.

    04:02-04:06

and they seemingly have this easy life.

    04:08-04:13

They're so arrogant, they're so full of themselves, they can somehow just sin without shame.

    04:14-04:17

Like how do you live like that?

    04:19-04:22

And if we're honest, we tend to keep score.

    04:23-04:29

And when it seems like wicked people are ahead on points, that's just absolutely infuriating.

    04:30-04:31

Why is he doing so well?

    04:34-04:44

As I read one preacher put it this way this week, he said that Asaph was not looking at the sin of the successful, he was looking at the success of the sinful.

    04:46-04:46

    That's a problem.

    04:48-04:54

So then what we see next is Asaph goes on an epic rant.

    04:55-04:57

Now do the kids still call it an epic rant?

    04:57-04:58

    Is that still a thing?

    05:00-05:01

    You're not sure either?

    05:01-05:03

    Awesome, anybody, anybody at all?

    05:04-05:08

Okay, all right, Jocelyn says yes, it's still an epic rant, okay, thank you.

    05:08-05:14

So if somebody listens to this message, you know, next year or whatever, you're gonna be like, oh my gosh, that's so old.

    05:16-05:19

    When was this recorded, 1978?

    05:20-05:24

Epic rant, look at verses four through 12.

    05:25-05:29

Talking about the arrogant, wicked, prospering.

    05:30-05:32

He says, "For they have no pangs until death.

    05:35-05:37

Their bodies are fat and sleek.

    05:39-05:41

They're not in trouble as others are.

    05:41-05:47

They're not stricken like the rest of mankind." See that?

    05:47-05:47

    Cushy life.

    05:48-05:49

    They have a cushy life.

    05:51-05:53

Because of that, in verse 6, "Therefore, pride is their necklace.

    05:55-05:57

Violence covers them as a garment.

    05:58-06:00

Their eyes swell out through fatness.

    06:01-06:03

    Their hearts overflow with follies.

    06:03-06:06

They scoff and speak with malice.

    06:07-06:10

    Loftily, they threaten oppression.

    06:12-06:20

They set their mouths against the heavens and their tongue, excuse me, struts through the earth.

    06:20-06:21

What a word picture there, huh?

    06:22-06:25

They're just, they're so mouthy and they're so proud of themselves.

    06:25-06:40

It's like their mouth just like struts around "Like, look how awesome I am." He says, "Therefore, as people turn back to them "and find no fault in them." That's a problem.

    06:42-06:45

Verse 11, he says, "And they say, "'How can God know?

    06:46-06:51

"'Is there knowledge in the Most High?'" Mocking God.

    06:53-06:54

And then he sums it up again, just like verse three.

    06:55-07:05

He says, "Behold, these are the wicked, "always at ease, and they increase in riches." Wow.

    07:07-07:09

You know, I don't really have to unpack that very much, do I?

    07:09-07:11

    It's pretty, pretty plain, huh?

    07:12-07:22

Arrogant people, arrogant, wicked people, they're hateful, they're destructive, they're mouthy, they mock God, and they seem to be doing pretty good for themselves.

    07:27-07:29

How did God let that happen?

    07:34-07:35

How can God let that happen?

    07:39-07:39

    Does God know?

    07:40-07:41

    Do you think God knows?

    07:43-07:46

How arrogant and wicked and mouthy and violent and pride, do you think God knows?

    07:48-07:50

Okay, well, if God knows, then why doesn't he do something about it?

    07:51-07:55

I mean, if it was you, if you had the power to do something about it, wouldn't you?

    07:56-08:01

So how could the sovereign of the universe know and just sit by and watch this happen?

    08:07-08:09

    Why do wicked people prosper?

    08:11-08:13

Is there anybody else bothered by this?

    08:17-08:18

'Cause I'm gonna tell you I could rant.

    08:21-08:22

And I think I might for a few minutes.

    08:23-08:24

    (congregation laughing)

    08:27-08:29

That's the nervous laugh of people who know I'm not kidding.

    08:30-08:31

    (congregation laughing)

    08:33-08:34

    I'll be honest with you.

    08:34-08:36

Look, okay, this is a day of honesty.

    08:36-08:37

ASAP was honest, I'll be honest.

    08:38-08:42

During the whole, the COVID thing, I went through a very angry phase.

    08:45-08:55

It, like, I could feel my heart beating in my chest, like pounding against my ribs When I saw the person who caused the pandemic, remember gain of function?

    08:57-09:02

Now lecturing everyone on obeying senseless mandates and he wasn't obeying them himself.

    09:02-09:03

    Did that bother anybody else?

    09:07-09:11

I saw a governor shut down businesses because he said they weren't essential.

    09:11-09:19

Oh, but he kept his businesses open, which were essential according to him, but they really weren't essential.

    09:21-09:23

They're talking about bringing all this back.

    09:23-09:25

    Does that bother anybody else?

    09:29-09:31

    What about billionaire Jeffrey Epstein?

    09:34-09:39

He flew little girls in and out of his island and authorities did nothing to investigate that.

    09:39-09:41

I read this quote in an article this week.

    09:41-09:42

I gotta read it to you.

    09:43-09:47

Because this epitomizes exactly what ASAP is talking about.

    09:47-09:48

    Listen to this.

    09:48-10:00

It says, "Locals say Epstein was flying in underage girls "long after his conviction for sex crimes, "and authorities did nothing to stop him." Now listen to this quote.

    10:00-10:08

Quote, "It was like he was flaunting it," says an employee at the airstrip on St. Thomas.

    10:09-10:19

"It was like he was flaunting it, "flying children in for unspeakable things." He's proud of himself.

    10:20-10:21

    Check this out.

    10:23-10:23

    All the quote goes on.

    10:24-10:26

I can't imagine it gets worse, but it does.

    10:27-10:48

Look, it says, "But it was said that he always tipped well, "so everyone overlooked it." He's doing things to children, and he's making a way for other people to do things for children, but I'm not gonna say anything because he's a healthy tipper.

    10:50-10:51

Is anybody else bothered by that?

    10:54-11:02

Oh, and by the way, when he was arrested in New York City and incarcerated, there were two cameras in front of his cell that malfunctioned.

    11:03-11:08

His cellmate was mysteriously transferred and not replaced.

    11:08-11:12

He was supposed to be checked on every 30 minutes by the guards, but he wasn't.

    11:12-11:16

The guards actually fell asleep and he was found dead.

    11:16-11:17

And they're like, he killed himself.

    11:22-11:27

Oh, and they removed the body, which they weren't supposed to.

    11:27-11:30

They didn't take pictures, which they were supposed to.

    11:30-11:35

And the autopsy said it looked more like a homicide than a suicide.

    11:38-11:40

And you're like, well, then what's the problem?

    11:40-11:40

    He's dead.

    11:42-11:47

And I would say, yeah, but who else got away with all this stuff now that he is dead?

    11:49-11:51

    Does that bother anybody else?

    11:52-11:53

    It bothers me.

    11:55-12:07

Christian couples that I know who can't have babies, but they do have miscarriages, or they do have babies with severe health issues.

    12:09-12:15

And at the same time, people that have kids that don't want them and don't want to take care of them.

    12:17-12:21

Before my wife was in finance, she was an in-home family therapist.

    12:21-12:30

And many years ago, she would actually go do like in-home counseling for these families that would have many, many healthy children.

    12:31-12:32

Seemed like about four a year.

    12:33-12:37

And they didn't want them and they didn't take care of them.

    12:37-12:41

So that was her job, to go in and try to help these parents take care of their own children.

    12:44-12:51

But the one story in particular that just always stuck with me is, Aaron went to help this one family.

    12:51-12:54

They had a little girl, but they just had another baby.

    12:55-12:57

And Aaron was in there, she was holding the new baby.

    12:58-13:11

And she said, "Wow, what a beautiful baby." And the dad said, "Yeah, I just wish she had some kind of health problem like your older sister, that way we'd get more money from the government.

    13:14-13:15

    Really?

    13:17-13:18

    That's where we are?

    13:21-13:22

    God sees us?

    13:25-13:26

    And it just goes on.

    13:28-13:29

    What about you?

    13:32-13:33

Do wicked, arrogant people bother you?

    13:34-13:36

Maybe you know somebody in your own life.

    13:36-13:38

Maybe you've got somebody at work, somebody you work with.

    13:39-13:42

You work with somebody who's just constantly bragging about their sin.

    13:44-13:47

And it just seems like everything goes their way in life.

    13:48-13:51

Like that's just, does God know?

    13:56-13:59

Why does it seem like God's blessing them instead of judging them?

    14:02-14:03

    Look at verse 13.

    14:05-14:11

He says, "All in vain have I kept my heart clean "and washed my hands in innocence.

    14:13-14:20

"For all the day long, I have been stricken "and rebuked every morning." And you see Asaph here, he's like, "I'm fed up.

    14:22-14:24

"I've tried doing the right thing.

    14:24-14:30

"I've played by the rules." And up at the point now where it's like, well, what's the use?

    14:31-14:32

    What's the use?

    14:35-14:43

And you know, church, let's be honest, we struggle with that because we come to church and we're like, God loves you like a father.

    14:43-14:47

We're like, okay, well, if God loves us like a father, then why are we the ones suffering?

    14:49-14:53

If God loves us like a father, why is it his children that are suffering?

    14:54-15:02

And the people that not only have no regard for him, but they openly mock him, they're the ones that seem like they're getting the life that I should get.

    15:06-15:07

Is this how God treats his children?

    15:10-15:20

I mean, let's be honest, like, hypothetically, if the world was such that bad people were always suffering, we would just be like, yeah, what do we call it?

    15:20-15:22

    That's karma, right?

    15:23-15:25

That's what you call cosmic justice.

    15:25-15:28

They did bad, and now they're getting what's coming to them.

    15:32-15:33

    That's not what we see.

    15:35-15:40

They're rich and they're influential and they have the best of everything.

    15:40-15:46

And he's like, why does it seem like only the people that are trying to do the right thing are the ones that are suffering?

    15:47-15:49

We've seen that so many times, haven't we?

    15:50-16:20

We see some celebrity, some actor or some comedian, and I use that word loosely, comedian, on TV openly mock God and people are just lined up, "Oh, they're huge fans and we're just following them on Twitter or X or whatever that thing's called now." And they get all the attention, they get all the money, they have all the followers and here's a special ed teacher who's struggling to pay the electric bill.

    16:23-16:24

    What is going on?

    16:28-16:29

    Look at verse 15.

    16:31-16:44

He says, "If I had said, 'I will speak thus,' "I would have betrayed the generation of your children." Asaph at this point is like, "You know what?

    16:45-16:56

"He's saying I had to bite my tongue." And I kind of laugh because I'm like, Well, you say you bit your tongue, but it's recorded in the eternal word of God here, right?

    16:58-17:00

Maybe there was more that he wanted to say that he didn't.

    17:01-17:06

But listen, his point here is just ranting and lamenting isn't good for others.

    17:07-17:10

And I just wanna give you a word of wisdom here from verse 15.

    17:12-17:13

Listen, you're an example to somebody.

    17:14-17:16

You are an example to somebody.

    17:16-17:21

Somebody is looking to you to say, this is what a Christian looks like, acts like, thinks like.

    17:22-17:36

And because that's true, if you are constantly articulating and voicing all of your objections and doubts about faith, what good does that do others?

    17:36-17:53

Think of that new believer that's like trying to figure things out or that person that's considering coming to faith in Christ and they're hearing you rant and complain about all these perplexities and you're like, well, I don't know if I wanna follow God Maybe God isn't as fair as I thought.

    17:53-17:57

And I think what Asaph is saying here is, you don't have to express all your doubts, right?

    17:59-18:00

You don't have to express all your doubts.

    18:03-18:05

You're like, okay, well then what should I do with them?

    18:07-18:08

    Well, look at verse 16.

    18:10-18:18

He says, "But when I thought how to understand this, "it seemed to me a wearisome task." Do you see that?

    18:18-18:20

He's like, I just couldn't wrap my brain around it.

    18:20-18:23

Like, there has to be a reason, there has to be an explanation.

    18:24-18:25

    Why are things this way?

    18:25-18:29

And he's like, it wears me out just thinking about it is what he's saying.

    18:31-18:47

Verse 17, "Until I went into the sanctuary of God." Reasoning it out did not help.

    18:50-18:51

    but going to church did.

    18:53-18:54

He went to the right place.

    18:56-19:02

You see what he's saying here is none of this made sense until I went to God.

    19:02-19:08

He said, "I took all this confusion that I had "and I brought it to God.

    19:08-19:14

"I brought it under his truth." And this is the servant today.

    19:16-19:24

As God's presence changes our perspective, Listen, this is why we worship.

    19:26-19:35

This is why we assemble together as a congregation to come before the throne of God and just bask in His majesty.

    19:36-19:38

This is why we do that.

    19:40-19:43

This is why we straightforwardly proclaim His word.

    19:46-19:53

"Like Asaph, my thinking can get messed up "and I need God to set me straight." That's why we do this.

    19:54-19:58

And especially this month, I would say this is why we pray.

    20:00-20:08

This is why we get into that intimate communion with God in personal prayer time, personal worship time.

    20:09-20:10

Why do we do all these things?

    20:11-20:13

Why do worship, preaching and prayer?

    20:13-20:17

Why do we do that is because God's presence changes our perspective.

    20:18-20:21

And this is how we can be okay with things that are not okay.

    20:22-20:24

    So, that was the introduction.

    20:28-20:29

    Here's the sermon.

    20:32-20:35

The nervous laugh of people who know I'm not kidding.

    20:36-20:41

How God's presence makes things okay that aren't okay.

    20:45-20:47

    This is game-changing stuff.

    20:48-20:57

This will literally change your life, your moment-by-moment, day-to-day way of living if you will absorb this into your soul.

    20:57-21:02

Number one, write this down, God's presence makes me see the big picture.

    21:03-21:13

See, Asaph said, "I had all these problems "Until I went into the sanctuary of God." Like, and what happened then?

    21:15-21:16

    He explains.

    21:17-21:19

He says, "Then I discerned their end.

    21:21-21:23

Truly, you set them in slippery places.

    21:25-21:26

You make them fall to ruin.

    21:28-21:32

How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors.

    21:35-21:37

Like a dream when one awakens.

    21:38-21:43

Oh Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.

    21:44-21:44

    Stop there.

    21:45-21:47

It's new perspective all of a sudden, right?

    21:47-21:50

And the first new perspective is a perspective of time.

    21:53-21:56

Because God's presence brings eternity into view.

    21:58-22:00

I have it on good authority that things will not always be as they are now.

    22:04-22:06

but God's presence makes me see the big picture.

    22:09-22:11

Have you ever gone to a movie?

    22:12-22:28

You go in and you sit down and you watch the first 30 minutes of the movie and you just get up and say, "This stinks, I'm out of here." You know, maybe you went to see "Rocky." You watch the first 30 minutes and you're like, "I'm leaving." That Italian fellow is never gonna get it together.

    22:29-22:30

    He's never gonna wanna fight.

    22:33-22:36

or you went and saw Jurassic Park, right?

    22:37-22:41

And you're like, "They just have dinosaurs in cages.

    22:41-22:43

    I mean, that was boring.

    22:44-22:49

So I left." Well, you didn't see how it ultimately played out, did you?

    22:52-22:59

But listen, when we get in His word, when we pray and when we worship, we are reminded of how it all plays out in the end.

    23:01-23:02

And I love this figure of speech here.

    23:02-23:04

He uses, look at verse 20 again.

    23:04-23:18

He says, "Like a dream when one awakes." Do you ever have a dream that just seems so real that you wake up and then you're still wondering if it's real?

    23:19-23:20

Has that ever happened to anybody else?

    23:20-23:25

That happened to me a couple of weeks ago that I just remember waking up like, wait a minute, did that really happen?

    23:28-23:32

But then you get this like hard dose of reality, Like, no, that didn't happen.

    23:32-23:34

    Okay, this is real life.

    23:35-23:35

    What's the point?

    23:36-23:44

The point is this, that's how it's going to be when God judges, that there are going to be some arrogant, wicked people someday that are going to have a cold dose of reality.

    23:44-23:50

And it's going to be as if they woke up from a dream and they're like, oh man, things are not how I thought they were.

    23:53-23:55

    They're gonna face God someday.

    23:55-23:58

You know, nobody's figured out a way to avoid that.

    24:01-24:06

And that's the first thing Asaph tells us is, why would we envy people that are going down?

    24:08-24:17

Why would I be jealous of someone who lives wickedly, but then they have to face the holy sovereign judge of the universe?

    24:17-24:19

Why would I envy that guy?

    24:20-24:22

God's presence makes me see the big picture.

    24:23-24:28

Number two, God's presence exposes my foolish thinking.

    24:29-24:30

    (sniffling)

    24:31-24:40

He says, "When my soul was embittered, "when I was pricked in heart, "I was brutish and ignorant.

    24:40-24:48

"I was like a beast toward you." You see, now Asaph's like, I just, I see myself so clearly now.

    24:50-24:57

He's like, when I went to church, or the sanctuary, you know, Old Testament, you know, worship, temple, we're talking about being in God's presence, right?

    24:57-25:04

He's like, "When I got in God's presence, I realized "I was so wrong to get bent out of shape about this.

    25:06-25:11

"I was so wrong to let my mind go there." Do you see this confession of his?

    25:13-25:18

That God's presence not only brings the big picture into focus, it brings us into focus.

    25:18-25:19

    Then it changes our thinking.

    25:24-25:25

    See how he describes himself?

    25:26-25:31

Verse 22, he says, "I was brutish and ignorant." He says, "I was ignorant.

    25:32-25:44

"I was ignorant." You know, one of the most ignorant things that people say, we all say it, I've said it, you've said it, and it's ignorant, the time that we go, "That's not fair.

    25:45-25:51

"That's not fair." Let's stop and think about that for a second.

    25:52-25:53

    What is fair?

    25:55-25:57

What do you mean by that?

    25:58-26:00

And where do you get this idea of fairness?

    26:00-26:01

    What does that mean?

    26:02-26:02

    That's not fair.

    26:02-26:03

    What's that mean?

    26:04-26:06

Do you know what we mean when we say that?

    26:07-26:10

We're saying, here's the way things are supposed to work.

    26:10-26:12

Everybody is supposed to get the same.

    26:13-26:17

And if I'm not getting something that somebody else is getting, that is not fair.

    26:17-26:19

    Where do we get that?

    26:20-26:20

    You know what that is?

    26:21-26:22

    That is ignorant.

    26:23-26:27

This idea that I should get what everybody else gets.

    26:28-26:30

And listen, we're born with that.

    26:30-26:31

    We have to unlearn that.

    26:32-26:35

And we need to get to the presence of God to get that out of our soul.

    26:35-26:37

    But we're born with that.

    26:38-26:39

    I can prove that.

    26:39-26:40

    Do this.

    26:41-26:47

Go next week, go somewhere and just buy like this giant tray of cookies and go back to the kids ministry area.

    26:47-26:49

What do we call that now, Harvest Academy?

    26:49-26:54

Go back there with this giant tray of cookies, Give every kid a cookie except five.

    26:55-26:56

Five kids, don't give them a cookie.

    26:57-26:59

    And don't tell them why.

    26:59-27:03

I will tell you five out of five what those kids are gonna say.

    27:04-27:05

    What are they gonna say?

    27:07-27:08

    That's not fair.

    27:08-27:09

    That's not fair.

    27:12-27:16

Don't actually do that because that's mean spirited.

    27:18-27:19

    But listen, it's true.

    27:20-27:25

It's this idea that when I came in here, I didn't know cookies were being handed out at all.

    27:26-27:30

But now that I see somebody else got one, it's not fair if I don't get one.

    27:30-27:32

And we take that into adulthood.

    27:32-27:33

    That's not fair.

    27:33-27:34

    That's not fair.

    27:34-27:35

    That's not fair.

    27:37-27:40

    Listen, you don't want fair.

    27:42-27:44

You don't want what you deserve.

    27:46-27:48

    Because here's what you deserve.

    27:48-27:50

Truthfully, you deserve hell as soon as you sin.

    27:51-27:52

    That's what you deserve.

    27:53-27:56

So Jesus Christ didn't come to give you fair.

    27:57-27:58

Jesus came to give you grace.

    28:00-28:08

And receiving Jesus Christ, believing that he died to take away your sin, believing that he rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    28:09-28:14

You see that, when you believe in Jesus, that keeps you from getting what you really deserve.

    28:16-28:17

    You don't want fair.

    28:18-28:27

He says, "Not only was I ignorant," He says, "I was brutish." I love this, the end of verse 22.

    28:27-28:30

He says, "I was like a beast toward you." Like a beast.

    28:33-28:42

He says, "God, you know, I realize now "I was thinking like an animal." Do you know what animals focus on?

    28:43-28:44

You know what they focus on?

    28:44-28:46

    The immediate, that's it.

    28:46-28:47

    They focus on the immediate.

    28:48-28:50

And my frame of reference is dogs.

    28:51-28:54

You know, if I whistle, my dogs will run to their crates.

    28:54-28:57

Like if we have to, you know, make a trip or whatever, I'll whistle, they'll go in their crates.

    28:58-29:01

And they know that I'll give them a treat if they go to their crates.

    29:02-29:13

They're not thinking, you know what, I might be in that crate for two hours or four hours, or what if they make a day trip and I'm gone for, they're gone for 12 hours and I'm stuck in this crate for 12 hours.

    29:14-29:15

    They're not thinking about that.

    29:15-29:16

You know what they're thinking of?

    29:17-29:23

Oh, he whistled, "Treef, a little bite of something." They're willing to take a bite of something.

    29:26-29:28

They're not thinking big picture, are they?

    29:29-29:30

And that's what Asaph is saying here.

    29:31-29:32

He goes, "I was just like a stupid animal.

    29:32-29:42

"All I'm thinking about is the immediate and future, "and don't give me that little bite of something." And I'm evaluating everything based only on what is in front of me.

    29:44-29:45

    Dogs do that.

    29:47-29:48

    They're not thinking big picture.

    29:48-29:49

    They're not thinking long-term.

    29:51-30:07

So like Asaph, when we get into God's presence church, we quickly move from, something is wrong with what God is doing, and instead we move to, something is wrong with the way that I'm thinking about this.

    30:08-30:13

Because God's presence exposes my foolish thinking, right?

    30:14-30:24

And then finally, number three, and this is last and most important, by the way, God's presence reminds me that He is what I want.

    30:28-30:29

    Look at verse 23.

    30:30-30:33

He says, "Nevertheless, I am continually with you.

    30:36-30:44

You hold my right hand." He said, "But God, you know, I have you.

    30:46-30:46

    I have you God.

    30:46-30:52

And you're holding my hand like a dad.

    30:55-31:09

And I can't help but think, you know, when I read this, I remember when I was like five or six, I was just a little squirt, but at five or six, my dad took me to my first pro wrestling match.

    31:09-31:13

If you've ever been to the pro wrestling matches, ladies and gentlemen, it's a real hoot.

    31:14-31:31

But I remember my dad took me to the pro wrestling matches and I had this sign, you know, that said WIMP because apparently that was the thing you call this, it was Iron Mike Sharp Canada's greatest athlete, you called him a WIMP and that really angered him.

    31:31-31:32

He didn't like to be called a WIMP.

    31:33-31:35

    Unlike the rest of mankind.

    31:35-31:36

    That really made him mad.

    31:37-31:45

And I remember holding my sign up and he came out and he was covering his ears and he was kicking the ropes and he was screaming because everybody was chanting wimp.

    31:45-31:57

And I remember leaning to my dad and saying, "Dad, do you think he saw my sign?" And my dad leaned down and he said, "I'm sure he saw your sign." I was terrified.

    31:59-32:02

I was five, stop laughing at me.

    32:02-32:09

But I was terrified because in my mind, he was gonna come running out of the ring, he saw my sign and he was gonna attack me.

    32:09-32:11

He was huge, he was built like a grizzly bear.

    32:12-32:17

He's this monster, and I'm just like, I was like knee high to a squirrel, and I was terrified.

    32:18-32:18

But you know what I did?

    32:19-32:21

I remember this like it was yesterday.

    32:21-32:31

I remember leaning into my dad's hip and grabbing his hand, and I remember in that moment, I'm like, "He can't get me now.

    32:32-32:38

"There is not a force on this planet that can get me now "because I'm in my dad's hand," right?

    32:40-32:41

And that's what Asaph is saying.

    32:42-32:47

He says, "You know, there's just something about leaning into your father and holding his hand.

    32:47-32:49

You can't put a price tag on that.

    32:51-33:05

That has greater value than anything." Verse 24, he says, "You guide me with your counsel." Has God's wisdom ever benefited anyone?

    33:07-33:44

everyone who followed it. He says, "And afterward you will receive me to glory." And man, you know, if you're in the middle of one of those moments like Asaph where you're just ranting and raving about the unfairness of life and the arrogant wicked, you know what I wish I could do? I wish that somehow I could just kind of peel the curtain back and let you peek into heaven. Just get like a five second glimpse into heaven while you're here on earth, and if I could do that, if I was able to do that, like, hey, five seconds, here you go, this is what heaven looks like, this is what is waiting for you.

    33:44-33:49

If I could do that, I guarantee you, you would never envy anyone again.

    33:55-34:02

Listen, and I don't say this lightly, going to church is that glimpse of heaven.

    34:03-34:10

I can't pull the curtain back, but the best that I can get to show you what heaven is supposed to look like on earth is coming to church.

    34:12-34:13

Because what are we after here?

    34:14-34:15

    God's presence.

    34:16-34:17

    We're surrounded by God's people.

    34:18-34:20

We're immersing ourself in God's truth.

    34:20-34:25

We are worshiping God, and we are experiencing the joy that Jesus Christ gives.

    34:25-34:28

All of those things that we're going after here, that's what heaven is.

    34:28-34:32

This is like supposed to be the sample of that.

    34:35-34:37

    Look at verse 25.

    34:39-34:43

He says, "Whom have I in heaven but you?

    34:44-34:47

And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

    34:48-35:04

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." I love that concept of portion.

    35:04-35:06

You know what a portion is?

    35:06-35:10

A portion is just simply that which is allotted to you.

    35:13-35:18

And here Asaph is saying, God is what I get.

    35:20-35:21

My portion, what is allotted to me?

    35:23-35:23

    God himself.

    35:24-35:25

    God is my portion.

    35:29-35:32

And I would say, top that.

    35:34-35:39

Tell me, what does the wicked have that matches this?

    35:41-35:46

What do they have that matches what God gives, what God offers, and what God promises?

    35:46-35:47

    What do they have?

    35:49-35:53

You know, the wicked says, hey, I have a mansion on 50 acres.

    35:55-35:59

And I say, "Jesus Christ is preparing a place for me.

    36:00-36:26

It's gonna make your mansion look like a porta potty." The wicked says, "I have a billion dollars." And I say, "You know, my God has more than that just in the cup holder of his Lamborghini." The wicked says, "So many people love me." And I say, yeah, the God of the universe loves me.

    36:28-36:32

You see, and it's when you get to that place that you say what Asaph said.

    36:33-36:46

He's like, I realized, I realized when I spent time in God's presence, I realized the most profound thing that I will ever realize in all of human existence, and it's this, God is what I really want.

    36:48-36:49

    God is what I want.

    36:51-36:52

    because there's nothing greater.

    36:56-37:02

Being in his presence reminds me there's nothing on earth that I desire besides him.

    37:05-37:19

Well, you know, Asaph in the front end of this Psalm was sort of comparing himself with the arrogant wicked and you know he closes the same way.

    37:21-37:24

comparing his lot with the wicked once again.

    37:24-37:27

Look at verse 27 and 28.

    37:28-37:33

It says, "For behold, "those who are far from you shall perish.

    37:35-37:39

"You put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

    37:40-37:44

"But for me, it is good to be near God.

    37:45-37:56

"I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works." He says, "Yeah, you know what?

    37:57-37:59

    I'm going to reevaluate here.

    37:59-38:08

You know, there really is a difference between people who are seeking the Lord and these arrogant, wicked people that prosper.

    38:09-38:33

There is a difference." And being in God's presence might not change any of your circumstances right now. But do you know what it will change? It will change your perspective right now.

Small Group Discussion
Read Psalm 73

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Have you ever been bothered by arrogant and wicked people prospering? How did that affect you?

  3. Read Psalm 73:15 again. Why is it important that you are careful to not just air all of your theological frustrations? Is it ever appropriate to share your frustrations? If so, how?

  4. How can you turn your envy of the wicked into pity (and prayer) for the wicked?
