Alright, grab your Bibles. You have them with you? You're gonna need them.

    00:33-00:55

Open up to Malachi and chapter 3 While you're turning there You know several years ago. I was at the doctor and Just for my normal Routine checkup I go into the doctor and you know how the physician's assistant comes in and puts that thing over your arm with the little pipe and the What's that thing?

    00:56-01:06

The blood pressure yeah, yeah, yeah And she's-- so she's taking my blood pressure, and she gets this absolutely horrified look on her face.

    01:07-01:07

    Horrified.

    01:09-01:11

She goes, are you feeling OK?

    01:11-01:12

I'm like, yeah, I feel all right.

    01:15-01:19

She says, your blood pressure is dangerously high.

    01:20-01:22

I'm like, no, I don't feel stressed or anything.

    01:22-01:23

    I haven't been-- you know.

    01:24-01:26

She goes, no, you don't understand.

    01:26-01:31

This is, she goes, "This is serious." She threw the cuff down on the counter and walked out.

    01:33-01:37

So I'm sitting on that bench, you know, with the big sheet of tissue paper.

    01:37-01:40

I'm just sitting there crinkling on this tissue paper.

    01:42-01:49

And I had this moment, I'm gonna be honest with you, I had this moment, I don't know what it's like at your doctor, but at my doctor, you gotta wait for the doctor.

    01:49-01:49

    Anybody else?

    01:50-01:51

    Just me?

    01:51-01:52

Okay, you gotta wait for the doctor.

    01:53-01:56

So I'm sitting there and it was, It felt like three hours.

    01:56-01:58

It was probably only 10 or 15 minutes.

    01:58-02:04

But I honestly, Audrey, I was just sitting there like looking at my life.

    02:04-02:05

    Like I'm in my 30s.

    02:07-02:09

What's going to happen with my wife?

    02:10-02:10

What's going to happen to my kids?

    02:12-02:14

So my doctor eventually comes in.

    02:15-02:18

And he says, we've got to talk about your blood pressure, man.

    02:19-02:23

He says, you've never had high blood pressure, but this is scary high, man.

    02:25-02:26

    I said, I know.

    02:26-02:28

And he says, well, have you had any major lifestyle changes?

    02:29-02:30

    I said, no.

    02:32-02:35

We got a really serious concern here.

    02:35-02:40

And he looked over, and he said, is that the cuff that they use to take your blood pressure?

    02:42-02:44

Me, Mr. One Foot in the Grave, said, yeah.

    02:45-02:47

That was the cuff that they used.

    02:47-02:53

He goes, that's the cuff they use on 10-year-olds.

    02:55-02:57

It's no wonder your blood pressure was high.

    02:57-03:00

So he went out and got a regular cough and all over again.

    03:00-03:02

    Oh, your blood pressure's great.

    03:03-03:05

    And I was invigorated.

    03:07-03:08

There's nothing like good news, right?

    03:09-03:10

There is nothing like good news.

    03:12-03:19

And I have been so excited to give this message because I'm going to give you some good news today.

    03:20-03:21

    And it's three words.

    03:22-03:23

    The three words are these.

    03:25-03:26

    It gets better.

    03:28-03:29

    It gets better.

    03:30-03:37

For those of you who have battled cancer and sickness, it gets better.

    03:39-03:44

For those of you that have had to deal with injustice, it gets better.

    03:45-03:52

For those of you who have been crushed by abandonment or abuse, it gets better.

    03:54-04:01

For those of you who have been afflicted by depression, it gets better.

    04:02-04:11

For those of you that have had to watch loved ones suffer or even had to say goodbye to some loved ones, it gets better.

    04:13-04:14

    The message today gets better.

    04:15-04:19

An eternal perspective keeps you on track.

    04:22-04:23

And really that's what it is, isn't it?

    04:24-04:30

It's about getting an eternal perspective, because we are people that get so focused, don't we Matt, right in the here and now.

    04:31-04:32

Right in the here and now.

    04:32-04:38

And that's what we're seeing God's Word call us to here in Malachi, is getting back to an eternal perspective.

    04:40-04:53

You don't walk out after the first scene of a movie and say, "Well, that stunk." You don't abandon hope during the first quarter of a football game saying, "We stink!" Unless you live in Cleveland.

    04:55-04:59

Look, have I become your enemy because I declared to you the truth?

    05:00-05:13

Even their players are like, "Can I be a stealer?" If you want motivated to get back on track, church, you've got to take the long view.

    05:14-05:15

You've got to take the long view.

    05:16-05:17

So let's get right to it.

    05:17-05:18

    Number one, jot this down.

    05:19-05:20

    This is awesome news.

    05:22-05:27

It gets better, and no one is more excited than God.

    05:28-05:30

I was studying this passage this week.

    05:30-05:32

I actually called a pastor friend of mine.

    05:32-05:39

I'm like, "This is the first point of my sermon, I'm gonna run this by you because I'm like, like my mind is being like just obliterated here.

    05:39-05:41

I'm like, this is the first point of the sermon.

    05:41-05:43

It gets better, no one's more excited than God.

    05:43-05:44

I'm like, what do you think about that?

    05:44-05:45

    He's like, yes, that's true.

    05:46-05:46

    Like, okay.

    05:48-05:49

Because that's what I see in the text here.

    05:50-05:51

    Look at verse 16.

    05:52-05:56

It says, "The those who feared the Lord spoke with one another.

    05:58-06:02

The Lord paid attention and heard them and a book of remembrance was written.

    06:04-06:12

before him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed his name." Already in Malachi a couple times, haven't we?

    06:12-06:15

We've heard from the haters, we've heard from the mockers, haven't we?

    06:16-06:17

Haven't we heard from those guys?

    06:17-06:22

Now we see the God-fearers show up.

    06:24-06:35

And notice it says in your Bible that, verse 16, "They spoke with one another." It doesn't even say in this passage that they were worshiping, I'm sure they were, but they weren't here.

    06:36-06:40

It doesn't even say that they were praying, I'm sure they were, but they weren't here.

    06:40-06:43

What is highlighting here is they were speaking to one another.

    06:45-06:46

    Don't miss this.

    06:48-06:57

Because people are so ready to say, "Well, you know, you don't gotta go to church "to be a Christian." And we sound so spiritual when we say those things.

    06:59-07:08

"You don't gotta go to small group to be a Christian." But this is exactly why we are assembled here this morning.

    07:10-07:15

This is exactly why we encourage you to get involved in one of our small groups.

    07:15-07:17

You need to take note of this.

    07:17-07:33

When corruption abounds, and it is, when sin is crushing and oppressing and smothering our culture, and it is, and while the wicked are frolicking, we don't need to hide, which some of us wanna do.

    07:34-07:41

We don't need to just take it out on social media, which some of us do.

    07:42-07:43

What do we need to be doing?

    07:45-07:46

We need to be speaking to each other.

    07:49-07:50

We need to be speaking to each other.

    07:51-07:51

    Speaking what?

    07:51-07:59

speaking encouragement, speaking reminders of the glories of God, the glorious truths of His Word.

    08:00-08:02

It says that God has a book. Did you know that?

    08:04-08:07

God has a book. The Bible talks about it in many, many, many places.

    08:08-08:13

God has a book. Exodus 32, Psalm 69. God has a book.

    08:13-08:18

Interestingly here, Malachi says that the book was written before him.

    08:19-08:28

The Hebrew literally means "in sight." Meaning God has the names of His people written down.

    08:29-08:33

And where does He keep that book? In some box in His cellar?

    08:34-08:36

    Some shelf in the attic?

    08:36-08:42

God has the names of His people written down, and Malachi says that it is right in front of Him.

    08:43-08:44

    Doesn't that encourage you?

    08:46-08:49

Where are you God? I was like, I got my eye on you.

    08:49-08:53

In fact, you're right here on page 307.

    08:55-09:03

And if you think you're excited for heaven, I want to show you that no one is more excited than God.

    09:03-09:23

Look at verse 17. It says, "They shall be mine, says the Lord of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him." Do you see that?

    09:24-09:30

God says, "Mine, a treasured possession." Treating like a child, like a son.

    09:31-09:34

Do you see the passion of God for His people?

    09:35-09:43

Some people think of God as being indifferent or unfeeling, Like he's just sitting in heaven going, "Well, turn or burn, don't matter to me.

    09:43-09:47

I'll be God either way." Like he's this unemotional person.

    09:47-09:52

And we see here in chapter 3 verse 17, God is anything but.

    09:52-09:58

You see the passion that God is looking forward to being with His people.

    10:01-10:07

You remember back in verse 14, the accusation was made from some of the haters.

    10:07-10:10

the accusation was made that it is vain to serve God.

    10:11-10:17

So let me ask you, after reading verse 17 and thinking about what's ahead, do you still think it's vain to serve God?

    10:20-10:20

    I'll put it this way.

    10:21-10:29

In a hundred years, look me up, and ask me then how vain it was to serve God on my days on the earth.

    10:30-10:34

Ask me in a hundred years if it was vain that I trusted the Lord.

    10:35-10:47

In a hundred years, I want you to see how God is loving and caring for His people in person, and then on that day, I want you to ask me how vain it was.

    10:50-11:05

The Jews here in Malachi's day were so caught up in the moment, and so often we get so caught up in the here and now, the moment, the current circumstances, that we forget this glorious truth.

    11:05-11:10

Things are not always going to be as they are now.

    11:12-11:18

It gets better, and no one is more fired up for it than God.

    11:20-11:21

    Number two, jot this down.

    11:23-11:26

We have to make it clear, it gets better, but not for everyone.

    11:28-11:29

    Look at verse 18.

    11:31-11:46

"Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve Him." That was part of the problem in Malachi's day, right?

    11:47-11:50

Chapter 2, verse 17, we couldn't see distinctions.

    11:51-11:54

Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord.

    11:54-11:59

They were saying, "There's no distinction. It doesn't matter what you do." We saw it in chapter 3, verse 15.

    11:59-12:08

"The evildoers prosper, it doesn't matter what you do, there's no distinction." Well, hear this, the distinction is about to be evident right quick.

    12:09-12:10

Okay? Because look at chapter 4.

    12:10-12:22

"For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble.

    12:24-12:40

"The day that is coming shall set them ablaze," says the Lord of hosts, "so that it will leave them neither root nor branch." Really, the day is the theme of this section that we're covering today.

    12:40-12:43

Five times God mentions the day, the day, the day, the day.

    12:43-12:44

    What day?

    12:45-12:50

Well, you know, on the wall of God's office, He has a calendar.

    12:51-12:55

And you flip forward some pages, I don't know how many pages, but he has a day circled.

    12:56-13:02

Like, "What happens on that day, Lord?" He says, "That is the day." And that is the day that we're talking about here in Malachi.

    13:05-13:10

And usually in God's Word, as it is here, usually that day is associated with judgment.

    13:11-13:15

Usually in your Bibles, when God speaks of the day, it's not good news for a lot of people.

    13:17-13:23

In this passage, he talks about the arrogant and the evildoers being like stubble.

    13:23-13:29

"What do you mean stubble? We usually think of, 'Oh, you didn't shave in a couple of days.'" That comes from the real picture.

    13:30-13:37

It was when they harvested crops, and they would sort of take that sickle and take the head of the wheat, the rye, the barley, whatever, they'd take it off.

    13:37-13:52

Well, that stalk, that trunk of the wheat that was left on the ground after it was harvested, that little wheat trunk was called stubble, And it burns very easily.

    13:54-14:03

Notice also, he says at the end of verse 1, "So that it will leave them neither root nor branch." What does that mean?

    14:06-14:09

That means, for the wicked, there's no coming back from this.

    14:11-14:13

Like, how many of us have pulled weeds, right?

    14:13-14:14

    We've all pulled weeds.

    14:15-14:16

You know how it goes when you pull weeds.

    14:16-14:20

If you get a pool of weed, and you just get to the top, what happens?

    14:21-14:23

That weed's back in about 12 minutes, right?

    14:23-14:27

You've got to grab that thing at the base and get the root, right?

    14:29-14:40

That's what God's saying. He goes, "Hey, on this day, it's all going to be gone." The root and the branch, there's no coming back for the wicked from this.

    14:42-14:53

And I promise you, because God's promising you, that you're going to see the distinction then between who loves the Lord and who doesn't.

    14:54-14:57

I mean, it looks like everyone's treated the same now, doesn't it?

    14:58-14:59

    Not then.

    15:00-15:09

So Christians, if you're sitting here today and you've given your life to Jesus Christ, if you are born again, here's the news for you.

    15:10-15:13

This life on this earth is as bad as it's going to get for you.

    15:15-15:16

    It gets better.

    15:16-15:19

In fact, this life on the earth is the closest you'll ever get to hell.

    15:21-15:24

But I have to give a word of caution here for somebody here who doesn't know the Lord.

    15:26-15:32

Maybe somebody here has been on the fence, been thinking about it, been seeking, I don't know.

    15:34-16:09

But if you're sitting here and you don't know the Lord, This is as good as it gets for you on this earth and this earth is the closest You're ever going to get to heaven So if you're sitting here today and you're thinking to yourself, you know, I don't know I don't know if i've ever been on track with the lord. You're talking about getting back on track I don't know if i've ever been on track Well today's the day It gets better But not for everyone You understand that your eternal future can change in one instant.

    16:10-16:11

    Do you realize that?

    16:12-16:14

Your eternity can change like that.

    16:15-16:20

And that instant is when you see yourself for who you really are.

    16:21-16:24

"I'm lost. I'm wicked at my core.

    16:26-16:35

By nature I'm rebellious. I'm selfish." You see yourself for who you are, but then you have to see Jesus Christ for who he is.

    16:36-17:09

He is the God who loves me. He is the God who took on the form of man. He took on a human body so that he could march that human body up and die on a cross in my place. That's my God who rose from the dead to conquer sin and Satan and death and to secure my future and to For the joy that was set before Him, He gave His life, He laid His life down.

    17:11-17:13

He endured the cross, despising its shame.

    17:14-17:15

    That's my God!

    17:18-17:26

So as we're going to be talking about this good news today, it's important that we pause and remind, it gets better, but not for everyone.

    17:28-17:33

Today can be a new day for you to receive Christ as your Lord and Savior.

    17:35-17:42

Number three, I love this, it gets better in every way.

    17:43-17:47

It gets better in every way. Look at verse 2 in chapter 4.

    17:49-17:55

"But for you who fear My name, the Son of Righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.

    17:56-18:05

"You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall." You know, I did a lot of studying this week.

    18:05-18:07

This Son of Righteousness, what's going on there?

    18:07-18:09

    Is that the actual Son?

    18:10-18:14

Is it talking about the celestial ball?

    18:15-18:16

    Is it a metaphor?

    18:18-18:25

And I really believe that the Son of Righteousness being discussed here is actually Jesus Christ Himself.

    18:26-18:27

    Why?

    18:28-18:41

Because many, many, many times in Scripture, Jesus, God, is called the Son, called a star, called light.

    18:41-19:00

One example here, we have Luke 1.78, it says, "The sunrise shall visit us from on high." Another reason I believe that this "Son of Righteousness" refers to Jesus Himself is just simply this, it's talking about the Son of Righteousness with healing in its wings.

    19:01-19:04

Well, that orange ball in the sky can't heal people.

    19:06-19:07

    But Jesus can heal people.

    19:08-19:09

    A metaphor can't heal people.

    19:10-19:13

    But Jesus heals people.

    19:15-19:17

And how afflicted we are as people.

    19:19-19:21

Just think in terms of the physical.

    19:23-19:28

You know, I have it up in the office. I could show you my prayer journal.

    19:29-19:37

How many prayer requests do we get for people to be healed and whole?

    19:39-19:46

How many prayer requests are pleased for health, for surgeries, for cancer, for recovery from injury?

    19:49-19:51

    Here's some incredible news.

    19:52-19:59

There's a day coming when the sun comes up, God's people are going to be healed and going to be whole.

    20:02-20:04

    Totally healed, totally whole.

    20:05-20:07

And I can wonder what that's like.

    20:08-20:09

Well, He tells you what that's like.

    20:10-20:17

"You should go out leaping like calves from the stall." Well, what is that?

    20:18-20:23

Calves from the stall, that's uninhibited joy. That's what that's like. Uninhibited joy.

    20:25-20:34

I don't have a calf. The closest thing that I have is Cade, my 11 year old.

    20:36-20:48

So I was thinking about uninhibited joy. Uninhibited joy, and I couldn't help but I would think last Christmas, our family was having our little, just my immediate family was having our little gift exchange.

    20:50-20:51

    And Erin was so excited.

    20:51-20:53

Erin loves to give gifts, right?

    20:53-20:56

I don't know if that's her love language or whatever, but I should probably look into that.

    20:56-21:01

But she was, you know, distributed gifts and everybody's, you know, sitting by their gifts.

    21:01-21:07

And Cade gets to this one gift in particular, it was a box like this, and Erin's like, oh, this is, this is, this is.

    21:08-21:12

And Cade opens up the box, she got him a laptop.

    21:13-21:18

Granted, it was used and refurbished, but I mean, what does a, you know, he's not launching space shuttles from our house, okay?

    21:20-21:22

But he opens it up and it's a laptop.

    21:24-21:29

So he opens it up and he goes, "Laptop." And he sets it aside.

    21:30-21:43

And Aaron just looks at me like, and Aaron goes, "Cade, there's a laptop "in that laptop box." And he goes, "Yeah." Sets it aside.

    21:44-21:53

And Aaron's like, "The heck." So about two minutes later, he opens up another present.

    21:55-21:57

It was a bag of Sour Patch Kids.

    21:58-21:59

You know that candy, Sour Patch Kids?

    21:59-22:01

It was a bag of Sour Patch Kids.

    22:01-22:04

    The kid lost his mind.

    22:05-22:08

"Sour Patch Kids!" Oh my gosh!

    22:08-22:12

He runs over, this kid is not a hugger, he runs over and dives on Aaron and hugs her.

    22:13-22:15

Oh, thank you so much, thank you, I love Starburst Kids.

    22:16-22:18

Then he runs over and he dives on me on the other end of the loop.

    22:18-22:20

Oh, dad, thank you so much, thank you.

    22:20-22:24

    And uninhibited joy.

    22:26-22:30

And I'm just sitting there thinking, we could have saved a lot of money on that laptop.

    22:33-22:34

But that's the picture here, right?

    22:35-22:36

    Uninhibited joy.

    22:38-22:40

Do you have any idea how awesome heaven is going to be?

    22:40-22:41

    No, you don't!

    22:44-22:48

Because whatever you think it is, it is infinitely greater than that.

    22:51-22:52

    But look at verse 3.

    22:53-23:10

It says, "And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act as the Lord of hosts." I don't think any of us are really excited about this thought.

    23:12-23:17

Even God doesn't delight in the death of the wicked.

    23:19-23:21

But there is something on that day that I'm going to rejoice in.

    23:23-23:34

Revelation 20.14, John says that he saw death and Hades and everyone who rejected Christ thrown into the lake of fire.

    23:35-23:45

My mind really has, over the years, I've thought about that so many times, because John saw death thrown into the lake of fire.

    23:46-23:47

What do you think that looked like?

    23:49-23:51

I mean, John says he saw death thrown into the lake of fire.

    23:51-23:53

    He saw something.

    23:53-23:54

    So follow me here.

    23:55-24:01

That means that death had to have had some sort of embodiment in some way, right?

    24:01-24:33

was some visible representation of death in order for John to see something thrown into the lake of fire. You understand what I'm saying? He saw something and what that something was I don't know exactly, but he saw death thrown into the lake of fire. And I thought, well, if death and Hades are sort of personified visible representation kind of things, I thought maybe autism is too. And I thought, wouldn't it be awesome on that day that that this is my dream, this keeps me going every day.

    24:34-24:38

But I think, you know, on that day, autism is thrown into the lake of fire.

    24:39-24:40

And this is what I'm hoping.

    24:41-24:44

I'm hoping that on that day, autism like catches itself right on the end.

    24:45-24:48

It's like about to go into the lake of fire and autism like stops, catches itself right in the end.

    24:48-24:48

    Like, woo.

    24:50-24:52

And then I pray that the Lord grants me permission.

    24:54-24:54

    Boom!

    24:57-24:59

I think about that literally every day.

    25:01-25:14

Oh God, may you grant me the joy, the thing that's plagued my family, the thing that's hurt my son, gone forever.

    25:16-25:16

    It gets better.

    25:18-25:18

    It gets better.

    25:19-25:25

God's presence, totally healed, total joy, total elimination of anything that can hurt.

    25:25-25:28

No more sorrow or death or goodbyes.

    25:28-25:29

    Better in every way.

    25:30-25:36

And finally today, number four, it gets better and I'll wait faithfully.

    25:38-25:41

It gets better and I'll wait faithfully.

    25:43-25:44

Look at verses four through six.

    25:45-26:20

Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him in Horeb "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes, and he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction." Notice in verses 4 and 5, two characters are mentioned, Moses and Elijah.

    26:21-26:25

You see these two sort of paired up, don't you?

    26:25-26:29

Like, you remember the Transfiguration, Matthew 17?

    26:29-26:30

    Do you remember that?

    26:31-26:42

And in Matthew 17, Jesus showed three of his disciples, basically, he's like, "I'm going to pull the curtain back. I'm God!" And he showed them a glimpse of glory.

    26:42-26:44

And who was there? Who was there with Jesus?

    26:45-26:46

    Moses and Elijah, right?

    26:47-26:50

and here they're sort of paired off again.

    26:51-27:00

So the question when you get to this passage is, was Malachi 4 and verse 5 fulfilled already?

    27:00-27:07

Or will it be fulfilled before the second coming of Christ?

    27:08-27:10

I did a lot of study on this this week.

    27:11-27:15

And I found this passage, like let's let Jesus clear that up.

    27:15-27:17

you know, was this already fulfilled or is it going to be fulfilled?

    27:17-27:21

Well, look at Matthew 17, verses 10-13.

    27:21-27:22

This is right after the transfiguration.

    27:24-27:32

It says, "And the disciples asked him, 'Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?'" It's because of this verse, that's why the scribes say that.

    27:33-27:49

But they're like, "Okay, we just saw Elijah, and then there's the whole John the Baptist thing, so they're asking about this." And he answered, 'Elijah does come, and he will restore all things.

    27:51-27:59

But I tell you that Elijah has already come.' And they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased.

    28:00-28:11

So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.' Then the disciples knew, the disciples understood, that He was speaking to them about John the Baptist.

    28:13-28:20

We know from Luke 1.17 that John the Baptist, we already talked about him in the series, he came in the spirit and power of Elijah.

    28:21-28:30

John the Baptist was Elijah at the first advent, but it seems from Scripture that Elijah is coming before the second advent, right?

    28:31-28:41

Because it says, "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes." Looks like there's some things yet to be fulfilled.

    28:43-28:44

    And the questions abound.

    28:44-28:48

Is it going to be a literal resurrection of Elijah?

    28:49-28:53

Is it going to be someone who comes in the spirit and power of Elijah, like John the Baptist did?

    28:54-28:59

A lot of commentators think that Elijah is one of the two witnesses in Revelation chapter 11.

    29:01-29:03

    It is a fascinating study.

    29:04-29:08

One that I spent hours on this past week, and I would be more than happy to discuss it with you.

    29:08-29:13

Just buy me a cup of coffee, and I'll love to share, love to talk.

    29:15-29:18

But for our purposes today, let's not miss the point of the passage.

    29:19-29:25

We can get so wrapped up in prophetic timeline that we miss the point of the passage.

    29:25-29:26

And here's the point, actually, too.

    29:27-29:30

First of all, verse 6, a day is coming.

    29:31-29:37

A day of restoration, a day of healing of relationships, and a day of repentance.

    29:39-29:46

Sin abounds and people are off track, and God says the ultimate day of getting back on track is coming.

    29:48-29:50

Here's another huge point you don't want to miss.

    29:52-29:52

    It's from verse 4.

    29:52-29:53

    Look at verse 4 again.

    29:53-29:55

He says, "Remember the law of my servant Moses.

    29:56-29:59

the statutes and rules that I commanded Him in Horeb for all Israel.

    30:01-30:17

For those of us waiting, for those of us who are waiting for the fulfillment of all things, we need to cling to, we need to embrace, we need to love the Word of God.

    30:18-30:22

Because until Christ returns, this is what I hold on to.

    30:24-30:25

    It gets better.

    30:26-30:27

That's why I love this book.

    30:28-30:32

I wouldn't be able to get up and share these words of encouragement if it wasn't for this book.

    30:34-30:38

God's given you this glorious gift of all of his promises.

    30:41-30:43

That's why we make such a big deal out of the Bible.

    30:44-30:48

That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel, we proclaim the authority of God's word without apology.

    30:49-30:55

This is the thing that we're so tightly holding onto until his return.

    30:56-30:58

We are all going to be in heaven.

    31:00-31:08

The redeemed are going to be in heaven in about an hour. So until then, can we wait faithfully?

    31:11-31:16

Can we take each day, one day at a time, and press on?

    31:19-31:20

Again, we can be so nearsighted, church.

    31:22-31:27

In our culture, we've learned that we want what we want, and we want it now.

    31:30-31:31

It's the culture we live in, right?

    31:31-31:46

We live in a culture where we stand in front of the microwave, and we say, "What's taking this stupid thing so long?" We're like speed, radioactive cooking our food, and that's not fast enough for us, right?

    31:46-31:50

We live in a day where somebody would be like, "Hey, check out this video.

    31:51-32:09

You know, guy falls out of a 20-story window and lives, and you click on it, and it's like, "Video will play after this 15-second ad." I'm like, "Pfft, ain't nobody got time for that." We live in a day, like, "I wanna buy this, but I don't have the money for it, so what do we do, Alex?

    32:11-32:12

We whip out the credit card, right?

    32:13-32:18

I don't have the money for it, but I want it now!" We're not taught to wait on anything.

    32:20-32:21

But listen, church, God has a plan.

    32:23-32:30

And He may not be rolling it out on my schedule, and He may not be rolling it out on your schedule, but believe me, He's rolling it out, and His schedule is always perfect.

    32:31-32:33

    So we wait.

    32:35-32:38

In the meantime, our priority is seeking the Lord.

    32:40-32:41

Our priority is serving the Lord.

    32:43-32:47

Our priority is loving Him and loving people in His name.

    32:49-32:57

And on the journey, there's times, church, that you're going to feel like maybe you've gotten a little off track in your walk with the Lord.

    32:58-33:00

And you might be asking yourself, well, how do I get back on track?

    33:02-33:04

    Keep this little checklist here.

    33:05-33:07

Write it down, put it in your Bible for future reference.

    33:07-33:13

When you feel like you're off track, examine yourself in the five areas that Malachi gave us.

    33:13-33:15

The first one is this, number one, are you worshiping?

    33:16-33:22

Breathing in God's love, and breathing out reverence for God.

    33:23-33:24

    That's real worship.

    33:26-33:28

Number two, are you being faithful in your marriage?

    33:28-33:33

If you're a married person, like to remind you, God says if you're faithless in your marriage, He takes that personally.

    33:33-33:35

He considers that being faithless to Him.

    33:36-33:39

You're not going to get on track until you're faithful to your wife.

    33:40-33:41

Until you're faithful to your husband.

    33:43-33:47

    Number three, personal holiness.

    33:49-33:50

All believers have God's Holy Spirit.

    33:50-33:51

Are you walking in the Spirit?

    33:52-33:58

Are you learning to say yes when the Spirit tells you to do something, and say no when the Holy Spirit tells you not to do something?

    33:59-34:00

    Personal holiness.

    34:00-34:03

    Number four, are you giving?

    34:05-34:07

    Faithfully, joyfully trusting God.

    34:07-34:08

    It's all His.

    34:08-34:13

I have the privilege of giving some back to Him, and He's going to give me more I can give more.

    34:15-34:20

And finally, are you stuck in the here and now?

    34:23-34:26

Or are you looking to then and there?

    34:28-34:28

    Because it gets better.

    34:30-34:30

    Will you pray with me?

    34:31-34:35

Father in heaven, thank you for the truth of your word.

    34:35-34:37

How lost we would be without your word.

    34:38-34:46

How lost we would be, Father, wondering who you are or what you're like or what it takes to live a good life or whatever.

    34:46-34:47

We wouldn't even know where to begin.

    34:50-34:56

But you've given us this glorious gift of your word that gives us encouragement with passages like this, that it gets better.

    34:58-35:00

We look forward to that day, Father.

    35:01-35:06

And I pray for my brothers and sisters here and for myself that you would help us to take the long view.

    35:08-35:15

Help us, Father, to realize and to embrace the fact we are not going to be walking on this earth eternally.

    35:16-35:21

We are not going to be living the situation that we're living in indefinitely.

    35:24-35:29

We have just a short chunk of time on this earth that we want to maximize for your glory.

    35:31-35:33

Father, help us to do so.

    35:35-35:42

Help us, Father, to not get so wrapped up in the wickedness that abounds in our culture right now.

    35:43-35:48

Help us not to get so wrapped up in the afflictions and the trials and the pains and the heartache.

    35:50-35:59

Father, help us to put an eye towards the future, which will fire us up to be faithful witnesses now.

    36:01-36:04

We pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, forever.

    36:05-36:06

    Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Malachi 3:16-4:6

  1. What exactly does it mean to "fear the Lord" (Mal 3:16)? List ways people display the fear of the Lord, and ways people don't. (Bonus if your list comes from things we've seen in Malachi.)

  2. How much does eternity fill your thoughts? How can you grow in having eternal perspective?

  3. "No One Is More Excited than God" about eternity. How do we know this from Malachi 3:17?

  4. Bonus theological discussion: How do you understand Malachi 4:5-6 in light of the ministry of John the Baptist and the future (not yet fulfilled) Day of the Lord?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another to constantly be seeking to get back, and stay, on track - especially in the 5 areas Malachi mentions: Worship, Marriage, Holiness, Giving, and Looking Beyond Today(Eternal Perspective).

Covering 2 Corinthians 8 - 9

  • 00:29-00:31

Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament.

    00:31-00:37

If you're having a hard time finding it, just go to the New Testament, go back a couple of pages, and you will be there.

    00:37-00:39

    We're in Malachi chapter 3.

    00:39-00:43

Before returning there, I'd like to tell you this story that I heard.

    00:43-00:47

I don't think it's true, but you'll get the point.

    00:49-00:59

The story is of this money in this wallet together, decided to have a conversation.

    01:01-01:02

    Did you hear about this?

    01:02-01:08

There was a $100 bill, and there was a $20 bill, and there was a $1 bill all in the same wallet.

    01:09-01:10

    And they got to talking.

    01:11-01:16

And the $100 bill said, "You know, I've had a pretty sweet life when you think about it.

    01:17-01:24

I mean, I've been to casinos, I've been to jewelry stores, I've been to some of the high-end places.

    01:24-01:29

I've had a pretty good life as a $100 bill." And the $20 bill said, "Yeah, you know what?

    01:29-01:32

Now that I think about it, I think I've had a pretty good life too.

    01:33-01:37

I mean, I've been to Applebee's, I've been to Chipotle.

    01:39-01:43

I've had a pretty good life being a $20 bill." Well, the $1 bill spoke up.

    01:44-01:46

He said, "You know, I've had an interesting life myself.

    01:47-01:56

I've been to the Methodist church, I've been to the Presbyterian church, I've been to the Episcopalian church." And the $100 bill speaks up.

    01:56-01:58

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on, hang on, hang on.

    01:59-01:59

    What's a church?

    02:02-02:18

Today we are going to be talking about stuff and money, in particular God's stuff and God's money, and even more particular, how getting back on track is getting back to faithful giving.

    02:19-02:25

Now first, look at chapter 3, verse 6, where we left off last week.

    02:27-02:31

Where God says, "For I, the Lord, do not change.

    02:32-02:38

Therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." Isn't it a great comfort to know that God never changes?

    02:39-02:40

    Isn't that a great comfort?

    02:41-02:51

to know that the God of Genesis, who created the world, is the same God alive and active today.

    02:53-03:01

The same God in the book of Revelation, who's going to bring all this to a close, is the same God alive today.

    03:01-03:05

He never changes. People change, right? People change.

    03:07-03:08

    God never changes.

    03:09-03:13

Notice God points out immediate application of this fact.

    03:14-03:22

He said, "That's why you owe children of Jacob, Israel." He says, "That's why you are not consumed." We've been talking about Israel's sin.

    03:23-03:31

God says, "You know, the only reason I haven't wiped you off the map is because of the promise that I made to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

    03:33-03:42

I don't change. I always keep my word." I'd like to remind you here that God has made a promise to you too.

    03:43-03:49

And that promise is stated in probably the most famous verse in the Bible, John 3.16.

    03:49-03:49

    You know that verse?

    03:50-04:06

It says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son," and here's the promise, "that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life." That's a promise that God has made to you.

    04:08-04:14

And when we think about God not changing, this is so comforting to me.

    04:15-04:21

And knowing that salvation is based on God keeping His work.

    04:22-04:25

It's based on God's integrity, it's not based on mine.

    04:25-04:26

    Isn't that comforting?

    04:27-04:36

If salvation was based on my integrity, based on me being faithful, I'd be saved and unsaved dozens of times a day.

    04:39-04:39

    But it's not.

    04:41-04:43

Salvation is based on God keeping His Word.

    04:45-04:56

Verse 7, "From the days of your fathers, you have turned aside from My statutes and have not kept them." There it is. God doesn't change, but we do, right?

    04:56-05:01

He says, "You've turned aside." Look at this next statement. I love this.

    05:01-05:03

You should underline this in your Bible.

    05:05-05:13

The Lord says, "Return to Me, and I will return to you," says the Lord of hosts.

    05:14-05:23

And that's really the gist of this whole sermon series called "Getting Back on Track." The Lord says, "Are you off track? Here's the good news.

    05:23-05:25

If you return to Me, I will return to you.

    05:25-05:30

All you need to do is take one step, and you'll find that God's already been there.

    05:32-05:33

    Are you off track today?

    05:34-05:36

Today's the day you can return.

    05:38-05:51

But you say, "How shall we return?" And I'm sure there are people sitting here right now that are saying, "You know what? I haven't felt like I've been on track in my relationship with the Lord in a very long time.

    05:51-06:01

I just haven't I haven't felt like I've really been I mean I know God's faithful, but I feel like I haven't been faithful How can I get back on track?

    06:02-06:20

Well God says I'll tell you Exactly specifically how to get back on track That's the series we saw week one you get to get back to real worship. What is real worship worship is breathing in God's love and and breathing out reverence for God, right?

    06:20-06:21

That's what we saw in chapter one.

    06:22-06:25

Breathe in His love, breathe out reverence.

    06:27-06:30

Getting back on track also means married people.

    06:31-06:34

It means that you have to be faithful to your marriage commitment.

    06:34-06:36

We saw that in chapter two, didn't we?

    06:36-06:43

God says, "If you're faithless in your marriage, "I consider that you being faithless towards me." God takes that very seriously.

    06:43-06:46

Men, if you aren't loving your wives, God takes that very seriously.

    06:48-06:52

Then last week we saw getting back on track means getting back to personal holiness.

    06:54-06:56

Get your heart in this book.

    06:58-07:02

Learn what it means to walk in the Spirit daily.

    07:04-07:06

    Allowing God to refine you.

    07:08-07:09

    So what's next?

    07:10-07:12

What's the next point of, "Okay, I want to get back on track.

    07:12-07:15

What are some areas that maybe I need to pay attention to?

    07:16-07:17

    Look at verse eight.

    07:19-07:24

You know, Israel asks, "How shall we return?" God says, "Okay, here's another one.

    07:25-07:26

    Will man rob God?

    07:29-07:38

Yet you are robbing me." Can we just pause for a second and try to wrap our brains around the concept of robbing God?

    07:41-07:42

Can we think about that for a second?

    07:43-07:52

God is the most powerful and giving person who has ever been.

    07:53-07:58

So to rob from somebody so powerful is foolish.

    08:00-08:06

And to rob from somebody who is already willing to give you everything is wicked.

    08:08-09:25

But God says, "Israel, do you know to me right now you are robbing me you are stealing from me so you can imagine the question they have again verse 8 but you say how have we robbed you I mean that's a pretty sobering statement Israel says well how have we how we robbed you look at God's answer in your tithes and contributions you are cursed with a curse for you are robbing me the whole nation of you like this isn't just like one or two of you God says all of you are ripping me off so if you want to get back on track there's an area that must be addressed you got to get back the faithful giving. And right now somebody's like, "Oh Pastor Jeff, this is so Old Testament. Pastor Jeff, do you even New Testament?" And yeah, let's New Testament together, shall we? Let's look at the very first major preacher of the New Testament. You're like, "Jesus, right?" No, no, no. Before Jesus, who was the first major preacher of the New Testament? Shout it out.

    09:26-09:28

    John the Baptist, right? Good.

    09:29-09:31

I want you to look at what John the Baptist said.

    09:31-09:32

We're going to play a little game here.

    09:33-09:39

We're going to play "Do You See a Theme?" I love this game.

    09:40-09:44

I play this game all week by myself, and it's so good to have some friends playing with me.

    09:46-09:47

    Luke chapter 3.

    09:48-09:49

Okay, we're playing "Do You See a Theme?" You ready?

    09:50-09:57

John the Baptist was going around preaching repentance, And the crowds asked him, "What then shall we do?" Boy, doesn't that sound familiar?

    09:58-09:59

That's exactly what they were asking Amalekiah.

    09:59-10:01

That's exactly the purpose of this series.

    10:01-10:03

How do I get my life back on track?

    10:04-10:07

And John's like, "I am so glad you asked." You ready?

    10:09-10:10

    Do you see a theme?

    10:10-10:52

He answered them, "Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise." Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, teacher what shall we do and he said to them collect no more than you are authorized to do soldiers also asked him and what shall we do and he said to them do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusations and be content with your wages so when directly asked how do we repent how do we get back on track by crowds, by tax collectors, by soldiers.

    10:52-10:53

    Did you see a theme?

    10:55-11:01

Every answer was tied to getting back on track with being faithful.

    11:03-11:04

    With money and stuff.

    11:06-11:16

OK, OK, OK, OK, you got me there, but you know, honestly, John the Baptist, he was a little rough. But our Lord would never talk like that.

    11:17-11:21

Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with such a tender heart would never talk to anybody like that.

    11:23-11:25

    I'll jot these references down.

    11:26-11:29

You can look these up later, but I'm going to paraphrase for you today.

    11:30-11:32

Luke chapter 18 and Luke chapter 19.

    11:33-11:43

Luke chapter 18, a rich young ruler comes to Jesus and says, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" In other words, "How do I get my life on track with God?" Remember Jesus' answer?

    11:45-11:47

Long story short, you keep the commandments.

    11:47-11:47

He's like, well, I've done that.

    11:47-11:51

And Jesus knew the man had an issue with money.

    11:51-11:58

He was wealthy and he was not only a possessor of things, those things possessed him.

    11:59-11:59

    Right.

    11:59-12:01

So Jesus knew this man's heart problem.

    12:01-12:06

And he said, you need to sell, sell what you have and give the money to the poor and then come and follow me.

    12:06-12:08

And the man walked away sad.

    12:09-12:14

I want you to see that the call to repentance was directly addressed to money and stuff.

    12:15-12:23

But then Luke chapter 19, we see another guy come to Jesus, and his name was Zacchaeus.

    12:23-12:25

How many people have heard of Zacchaeus?

    12:26-12:26

    All right?

    12:26-12:28

How many people know his song?

    12:28-12:29

    Raise your hand.

    12:30-12:30

    Do you know that song?

    12:31-12:31

Do you want to sing it?

    12:32-12:33

    Okay, ready?

    12:35-12:36

    Help me out here, ready?

    12:38-12:43

Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he.

    12:44-13:18

one he climbed up in the sycamore tree for the Lord he wanted to see love the song and as the Savior passed that way he looked up in the tree and he said for I'm going to your house today give yourselves a hand all right you're all "Oh, what were we talking about? Oh, yeah." You know the story of Zacchaeus, right?

    13:18-13:20

What was the first thing he did as a sign of repentance?

    13:21-13:21

    You remember?

    13:22-13:39

First thing he did as a sign of repentance, he said, "I'm giving half of my stuff to the poor, and if I've ripped anybody off, I'm going to pay them back four times when I defrauded them." So like, "If I ripped you off for a dollar, I'm going to give you back four dollars." You remember Jesus' response?

    13:39-13:45

He's like, "Salvation is coming." has come to this house, giving back the money wasn't what saved him.

    13:46-13:52

But getting right about the money was the evidence that his heart had changed. Do you see that?

    13:54-14:10

When it comes to money and stuff and spiritual reality, Jesus said the most profound statement ever made in Matthew 6 and verse 21, when Jesus said, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    14:12-14:13

    That is an objective test.

    14:16-14:22

Because you understand, church, there are only two books on this planet that will reveal your heart.

    14:23-14:26

One of them is this book, the book that God wrote.

    14:26-14:27

This book will reveal your heart.

    14:28-14:30

But do you know you have another book that will reveal your heart?

    14:30-14:31

    And it's your checkbook.

    14:33-14:40

Your checkbook will reveal your heart Because when you find out where you're spending your money, you find out where your heart is.

    14:43-14:50

In other words, if you show me your checkbook, and let me look at your ledger, I can tell you exactly where your heart is.

    14:51-14:53

So if you say, "Oh, you know what, Pastor Jeff?

    14:53-14:55

My heart is with the church.

    14:55-14:58

My heart is with the church, Pastor Jeff. I just love the church.

    14:59-15:00

I just love the church, Pastor Jeff.

    15:00-15:11

And that's where my heart is. Let me see your checkbook." Like, well, your heart is with entertainment based on where all your money's going.

    15:14-15:16

If you say, "You know, Pastor Jeff, my heart's for missions.

    15:17-15:28

Just love mission work, love to give the missions. I just have a heart for missions, Pastor Jeff. Oh, I just have a heart for missions. Let me see your checkbook." You have a heart for Arby's.

    15:30-15:34

Because Jesus said where your treasure is, that's where your heart is.

    15:35-15:39

Don't try to switch it. Well my heart's with mission so that must be where my treasure is.

    15:39-15:49

Jesus said no, that's not how it works. All right, so getting back on track with faithful giving, we're going to answer two questions today. The first one is this, how should I give?

    15:50-15:53

We're going to address something here so there's no confusion.

    15:54-15:57

How should I give? Let's talk about the tithe.

    15:59-16:01

There's a lot of confusion about this, okay?

    16:01-16:04

So pay attention or I will make you sing Zacchaeus again.

    16:06-16:10

We often use the word "tithe" in a generic sense.

    16:10-16:12

I've been guilty of that, just in a generic sense.

    16:12-16:13

    Give your tithe.

    16:14-16:17

We use it to talk about giving money unto the Lord.

    16:18-16:43

We use it as a generic word, but the word "tithe" literally is the 10% obligation to God that in the days of ancient Israel, Israel gave a tithe, or they gave 10% to the Levites, and then the Levites took that 10%, and they gave 10% of that to the priests, who were sort of a subset of the Levites.

    16:43-16:48

But actually, a lot of people don't know this, but in the Old Testament Israel, there were actually three tithes.

    16:48-16:49

    Did you know that?

    16:50-16:54

One went to the Levites, one went to the festivals.

    16:55-17:01

Israel threw great parties unto the Lord, and there was a tithe that went for that.

    17:02-17:07

And also Deuteronomy 14 says that every three years, another tithe was given for the poor.

    17:08-17:15

So understand the tithe in the Old Testament was like, I don't do math, what was it, like 23 and a third percent.

    17:16-17:21

Okay, it wasn't even like 10%, it was 23 and a third, right?

    17:23-17:24

You're like, "Well, wait a minute, do I have to tithe?

    17:27-17:35

I don't live in ancient Israel, and do I have to tithe?" Well, I believe that tithing is a great principle.

    17:35-17:37

    I do. I think it's a great principle.

    17:37-17:41

But tithing is not commanded in the New Testament.

    17:43-17:50

The New Testament says so much about money and giving, but nothing about tithing.

    17:51-17:54

What does the New Testament say about giving?

    17:54-17:56

Really, it's summed up in one verse.

    17:56-18:01

2 Corinthians 8, verse 3, sums up New Testament giving.

    18:02-18:13

"For they gave according to their means," as I can testify, "and beyond their means, of their own accord." So quickly, what does New Testament giving look like?

    18:14-18:19

First of all, it says, "They gave according to their means." You see those commercials? What's in your wallet?

    18:20-18:21

    What's in your wallet?

    18:22-18:23

You give according to your means.

    18:23-18:28

God's not calling me to give according to somebody else's means.

    18:30-18:31

    Right? God's not calling.

    18:32-18:35

Jeff, you should give according to Bill Gates' means of giving.

    18:37-18:44

I could never, for the rest of my life, if I worked eight jobs, give according to his means.

    18:46-18:49

God says you need to give according to your means, right?

    18:50-18:52

    Not according to somebody else's.

    18:53-18:56

Secondly, you see, He says in beyond their means.

    18:58-18:59

Beyond their means, what does that mean?

    19:02-19:10

Giving beyond your means, means giving more than even what is expected.

    19:11-19:20

It means something like this, you know, I was going to buy this thing for myself, but instead of buying that for myself, I'm going to use that money and give that to God.

    19:21-19:28

I'm going to forego something I want and give that money instead to God, sort of beyond the regular, right?

    19:28-19:30

This last phrase is so important.

    19:30-19:34

It says, "Of their own accord." It's a choice.

    19:35-19:36

Your giving is between you and God.

    19:36-19:38

I don't know what a single person in this church gives.

    19:39-19:39

    I have no idea.

    19:40-19:43

If you threaten my life, I couldn't tell you what anybody in this church gives.

    19:44-19:45

We have it set up that way.

    19:46-19:47

Because that's between you and God.

    19:48-19:48

    That's an act of worship.

    19:50-19:52

So I would encourage you, here's how you give.

    19:54-19:55

    Not under obligation.

    19:58-19:59

    Right? Not under obligation.

    19:59-20:03

We're not going to send our elders to your house to break your knees.

    20:04-20:07

Like I saw you gave five dollars last week.

    20:07-20:10

I think we can shake you down for a little more than that.

    20:10-20:12

That's between you and the Lord. Okay?

    20:14-20:15

    So how should I give?

    20:17-20:24

Makes it pretty clear. According to your means, beyond your means, and definitely if you're in accord.

    20:25-20:28

    Well, why should I give?

    20:29-20:32

That's the question we want to look at here. Why should I give?

    20:34-20:39

You know, God could have just sent Malachi to say, Israel, give to God.

    20:40-20:42

It's a necessary ingredient for getting back on track.

    20:43-20:44

    Amen, let us pray.

    20:44-20:51

While that is true, I want you to see in this passage that we're going to look at that God actually sells Israel on the benefits.

    20:53-20:57

God's like, "Here's why you should give." I'm gonna give you two today as we wrap up.

    20:57-20:59

Number one, why should I give?

    21:01-21:03

Because giving to God is good for your wallet.

    21:06-21:07

Look at verses 10 through 12.

    21:08-21:09

Giving to God is good for your wallet.

    21:12-21:15

Bring the full tithe into the storehouse.

    21:15-21:19

Okay, that was just a storage area in the temple.

    21:20-21:28

That there may be food in my house and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts.

    21:28-21:35

If I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.

    21:37-21:42

God says, if you give to me, I'm going to make sure that you have abundantly.

    21:43-21:44

He goes on, look at verse 11.

    21:44-21:57

I will rebuke the devourer for you so that it will not destroy the fruits of your soil and your vine in the field shall not fail to bear, says the Lord of hosts.

    21:59-22:04

the devourer, that's just the locusts, the things that would eat your crop.

    22:04-22:12

God says, I'm going to not only bless you, I'm going to stop whatever would take away that blessing.

    22:14-22:26

Verse 12, "Then all the nations, then all nations, excuse me, will call you blessed, for you will be a land of delight," says the Lord of hosts.

    22:27-22:29

certainly says something about the testimony, right?

    22:31-22:36

You see, it's not about like those TV preachers, like, look, God gave me a Mercedes.

    22:37-22:40

He gave me like-- well, he gave me like eight of them last week or whatever.

    22:40-22:41

    It's not that.

    22:42-22:50

It's I am content and perfectly provided for by my God, which causes me to be generous.

    22:53-22:53

    That's attractive.

    22:55-22:58

That's why all the nations call you blessed.

    22:59-22:59

    Right?

    23:01-23:12

So notice, underline this in your Bible, where it says, "Put me to the test." This is the only place in the Bible that I know of where God uses these words as a command.

    23:13-23:15

God's like, "I want you to test me on this.

    23:15-23:16

    "Put me to the test.

    23:16-23:19

"Try me on this." God says, "Look, I want you to try this.

    23:19-23:27

"If you give to me, I'm going to give to you." And honestly, some people have a hard time with that.

    23:28-23:32

They say, "I'm not sure that this should motivate me to give.

    23:33-23:44

I mean, the fact that God gives to me if I give to Him, should that motivate me to give?" Yeah, it should, because God told us this to motivate us, right?

    23:46-23:49

I mean, how crazy would that be of God to be like, "Put me to the test on this.

    23:49-23:51

If you give to me, I'm going to give to you." And you're like, "You know what?

    23:51-23:59

I'm going to trust God that He's going to provide for me, I'm gonna give to him generously and God's like whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa Little presumptuous aren't you?

    24:00-24:25

What for doing what you told me to do no You know when you see these things in the Old Testament one of the things you have to try to figure out is Is there a principle here that carries over into the New Testament and absolutely does second Corinthians 9 6 Says if we sow sparingly we will reap sparingly if we sow bountifully we will reap bountifully That's the same principle. It's an agricultural principle.

    24:26-24:27

How many people here have a garden?

    24:29-24:30

    Okay, some of you do.

    24:30-24:34

You know, if you go out to your garden every year, when do you plant your garden?

    24:34-24:36

Aaron does all this at our house. When do you plant a garden?

    24:37-24:37

    May? Okay.

    24:38-24:47

So if you go out in May, and you're like, "Here's four seeds," what kind of a garden are you going to have that year?

    24:49-24:50

    Pretty thin, huh?

    24:51-25:00

But if you go out into your garden and you're sowing all kinds of seed in your garden, you can expect more because you sowed more.

    25:01-25:02

God says this is a truth spiritually.

    25:03-25:09

God says, "The more you give to me, the more I'm going to give to you." It's proportionate.

    25:11-25:12

It's exactly what God does with money.

    25:12-25:19

God looks down from heaven, and when He sees people being generous and giving to advance His kingdom, God sees that, and God's like, "Hey, check this guy out.

    25:20-25:21

    He's just giving it away.

    25:21-25:23

And it seems like the more comes his way, the more he gives away.

    25:24-25:25

So let's get more his way.

    25:26-25:29

Let's just keep pushing it his way, because he's just distributing it.

    25:30-25:33

God sees who the distributors are, and he sees who the hoarders are.

    25:35-25:39

And God gets really fired up when he sees somebody distributing.

    25:39-25:45

Like, "Yeah, get him more, get him more, get him more." And this isn't conceptual.

    25:47-26:01

I was talking to somebody in this church a couple of weeks ago, who says, "Pastor Jeff, my finances don't make sense." This person said, "I was struggling financially, and I made a decision I'm going to get on track with giving to God.

    26:01-26:12

I never really was, but I'm going to do that." He says, "Now my finances don't make sense, because on paper I should be in the hole every month, but I never am." How is that?

    26:14-26:18

And I shared with him, Aaron and I were in that same situation.

    26:18-26:24

You remember that a few years back, when you did our budget, we were $330 in the hole every month on paper.

    26:24-26:27

But we never were in reality.

    26:29-26:30

    How is that?

    26:32-26:36

Because if you give to God, God gives to you.

    26:38-26:45

And in a message like this, I know there are some people here, I hear what you're saying, Pastor Jeff, but the reality is I can't afford to give.

    26:45-26:46

    I can't afford to give.

    26:46-26:48

    Somebody's thinking that right now.

    26:50-27:01

And I want to tell you as loving as I can, that if your attitude is I can't afford to give, that statement, I can't afford to give, that statement reveals the problem.

    27:03-27:06

That statement itself reveals the problem.

    27:08-27:12

Because you're obligating your money out ahead of time and spending it.

    27:12-27:20

These are the bills, these are the needs, these are the wants, and you look at what's left over, and you're like, "Well, I don't have enough left over to give to God.

    27:22-27:33

Therefore, I can't afford to give." That's why you need to get back to an Old Testament concept that I believe is certainly true in the New Testament, is certainly true today.

    27:34-27:35

It's a concept of first fruits.

    27:37-27:38

    You familiar with that concept?

    27:39-27:41

God introduced this to us in the Old Testament Israel.

    27:43-27:50

When you get your crop, God gets not just the best portion, but He gets the first portion.

    27:52-27:56

Not the leftovers. God gets first and God gets best.

    27:58-28:09

And that principle, if you will, by faith, if you will exercise that principle in your own finances, is you're going to see God fulfill His promise in you.

    28:10-28:15

When you get paid, the first check you write should be to God.

    28:17-28:25

Now look, our church isn't like in some financial crisis that the elders are like, you've got to really squeeze some more money out of these people.

    28:26-28:26

    We're not.

    28:27-28:28

    We're not.

    28:29-28:30

They're like, well, Matt, I don't like hearing this.

    28:30-28:31

I'm going to go to Northway.

    28:31-28:32

    Great.

    28:32-28:39

Listen, if you go to Northway, the first check you write should be to Northway, okay, to advance God's kingdom.

    28:40-28:44

It's not about earning money here or boosting our budget or anything like that.

    28:45-28:53

This is an act of worship, and for you personally, this is an act of faith to say, "I'm going to give God first and best." That's an act of faith.

    28:54-28:58

And you either believe God or you don't believe God.

    29:00-29:04

And the only way you're going to believe God is if you do what God says here and put him to the test.

    29:06-29:10

And someone might say, "Well, if God blesses me, I'll be glad to give to the church.

    29:12-29:19

Like if Aunt Petunia dies or whatever and leaves me money, I'll be glad to give to the church." The answer to that is, "No, you won't.

    29:20-29:20

    You won't.

    29:21-29:22

    You absolutely will not.

    29:23-29:33

Because if you don't give now, getting a bunch of money isn't going to motivate you to give I don't believe that. I'll prove it to you.

    29:34-29:35

I'll prove it to you right now.

    29:36-29:44

If you had a dollar to your name, okay, if you had a dollar to your name, and I said to you, "Can you give God one or two dimes?" Could you do that?

    29:45-29:47

"Oh, yeah, I could do that, one or two dimes.

    29:47-29:54

Yeah, I could give out to God." All right. If you had $100, could you give God $10 or $20?

    29:56-30:01

"Yeah, I think so." $10,000 to your name.

    30:01-30:03

Could you give God one or $2,000?

    30:04-30:07

Like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second here.

    30:09-30:14

Do you see how the more the amount goes up, the harder it is?

    30:15-30:23

And I think that's why Jesus in Luke 16, verse 10, Jesus said, "If you're faithful with a little, you'll be faithful with much." That's the truth.

    30:24-30:27

It's not like, well, I'm not faithful with a little, but if I had a lot, I would be.

    30:27-30:32

Jesus is like, "No, it doesn't work that way." You prove that you're faithful with a dollar.

    30:33-30:34

God's like, "Well, he handled that.

    30:37-30:43

I'm going to trust him to handle more." But don't think that it's going to automatically happen.

    30:43-30:46

I can't afford to give now, but if I have a lot, I will?

    30:46-30:49

No, you're less likely if you suddenly have a lot.

    30:50-30:54

Like, anybody here win that $700 million Powerball lottery last week?

    30:54-30:55

Show of hands, how many people? No?

    30:56-30:56

    Kidding.

    30:57-31:01

The lottery is just a tax on people who are bad at math.

    31:03-31:03

    So here's the test.

    31:05-31:15

Here's the test. Will you give God first and best, as an act of worship and as an act of faith, and watch Him keep His word?

    31:17-31:22

Because if you do, you're going to find out that giving to God is good for your wallet.

    31:24-31:26

One more reason you're not convinced.

    31:27-31:29

Number two, because giving to God is good for your soul.

    31:31-31:33

Look at verses 13 and 14.

    31:35-31:39

"Your words have been hard against me," says the Lord.

    31:41-31:49

But you say, "How have we spoken against you?" You have said, look at verse 14, this kills me.

    31:49-32:02

You have said, "It is vain to serve God." What is the profit of our keeping His charge, or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts?

    32:05-32:08

Talk about complaining about something that you aren't even doing.

    32:08-32:10

Right? Isn't that the point of Malachi?

    32:10-32:19

God's like, "Get back on track, get back on track, get back on track, and I get so hard to follow the Lord." That would be like me saying, "Oh, it's just so hard.

    32:19-32:24

"Oh, it's just so hard milking all those cows every morning.

    32:24-32:33

It's just so hard." And you're like, "Pastor Jeff, I didn't know you had cows." Like, "I don't." "Well, then why are you complaining about milking cows?

    32:33-32:40

That's kind of what's going on with Israel here." Like, "It's so hard to follow the Lord." And that's the point of Malachi.

    32:40-32:56

He goes, "You aren't." But this is interesting because when I read this section and I'm like, "Okay, what does this section have to do with the previous section?" because I don't think Malachi was scatterbrained, and I certainly don't think God is, that he's like, "Let me talk about apples." And all of a sudden I'm talking about oranges.

    32:57-33:01

I'm like, "What's the connection here?" And I found the connection.

    33:02-33:05

It's actually in the Hebrew word for prophet.

    33:06-33:07

Did you see it in verse 14?

    33:07-33:09

What is the, not the prophet, like the guy speaking.

    33:09-33:12

Like, what is the prophet of our keeping his charge?

    33:13-33:17

The Hebrew word for prophet is actually a negative word.

    33:19-33:25

Literally, it's plunder or dishonest gain.

    33:27-33:32

In other words, what they were saying was, "Serving God does nothing for me.

    33:33-33:35

Giving to God does nothing for me.

    33:36-33:38

You know what, I should just keep the money for myself.

    33:38-33:47

I should keep the crops that I give to myself, because giving them to God has done nothing for me." and that reveals the problem.

    33:48-34:03

It's not reverence, it's not worship, it's not any sense of "I'm here to serve God." It's "God hasn't cashed in for me." What a wicked and arrogant and disgusting attitude.

    34:03-34:04

    Like God owes us something.

    34:06-34:11

I heard a story a couple days ago, and I had to do more research because, quite frankly, I didn't believe it.

    34:12-34:16

It was on the news, and I looked it up, And this is true.

    34:17-34:18

    Not making this up.

    34:19-34:26

Maybe some of you saw it, but there's a priest in Northeastern Pennsylvania that was arrested for child pornography.

    34:27-34:27

    Did you see this?

    34:28-34:30

He was arrested for child pornography.

    34:32-34:33

    That's a whole nother...

    34:34-34:40

The thing that really stuck out to me is his reason for amassing child pornography.

    34:43-34:45

He said he did it because he wanted to get revenge on God.

    34:46-34:50

Okay, let's stop there for a second, because believe it or not, it gets crazier.

    34:51-34:52

He wanted to get revenge on God.

    34:54-34:57

On a scale of one to 10, how much do you think that affected God?

    34:58-35:03

Do you think God was like, "Oh man, he showed me." Really?

    35:05-35:09

    It's disgusting and it's stupid.

    35:09-35:11

I'm gonna get revenge on God?

    35:11-35:21

God's like shuffling around heaven and the angels are like, "What's the matter, Lord?" "I can't believe what that priest did." But the appalling doesn't even stop there.

    35:21-35:23

Do you know why he wanted revenge on God?

    35:24-35:26

Because God didn't let him win at poker.

    35:27-35:27

    True story.

    35:29-35:35

God didn't let me win at poker, so I'm going to get even with him and collect child pornography.

    35:37-35:42

Do you see how that's a modern-day example of exactly what's happening in Malachi.

    35:43-35:44

God didn't cash in for me.

    35:45-35:46

    I want a pony.

    35:46-35:48

Why hasn't God given me a pony?

    35:49-35:50

    God's so mean.

    35:50-35:59

And suddenly we turn into toddlers when it comes to stuff and money, thinking that God should cash in for us.

    36:00-36:02

Verse 15, here's the attitude again.

    36:02-36:05

And now we call the arrogant blessed.

    36:06-36:15

Evil doers not only prosper, but they put God to the test Look at how the wicked prosper. It doesn't matter what I do.

    36:17-36:28

These famous actors and actresses, they can blaspheme, they can do drugs, they can sleep with prostitutes, they can do whatever the heck they want to do, and they get away with it.

    36:29-36:33

And here's me, trying to be a good person. I don't have two nickels to rub together.

    36:35-36:39

That attitude. That attitude says so much about your heart.

    36:41-36:45

And I would love to launch in right now to a list of spiritual benefits.

    36:46-36:50

To a list of spiritual benefits when you are faithful in giving.

    36:51-36:52

I don't have time for that.

    36:53-36:56

I will, though, encourage you to check out on our website.

    36:57-36:59

We have previous sermon series up.

    37:00-37:37

We did a series a couple years back called "I Love to Give." And it's from 2nd Corinthians 8 9 I'd encourage you to go back and give that a listen if you're not convinced that giving is good for your soul But you see in this passage here we have a Malachi the negative example These words spoken like someone discontent ungrateful and bitter And you want to look at what other people have and you don't want to partner with God and trust God to provide for you If that's your plan, I'm going to give you the biggest spoiler alert of your life. You ready?

    37:39-37:48

If you're going to be so focused on what other people have and you're not going to partner with God with your finances, you are going to be a bitter and disappointed person.

    37:49-37:54

You're going to walk around saying it doesn't matter what you do. Look at how much better off other people are.

    37:56-38:02

You'll just echo these same foolish words that Israel is bowing off to God.

    38:03-38:16

But, but, when you partner with God in your finances, you get to see miraculous provision.

    38:19-38:22

And you get to experience the joy of giving.

    38:24-38:27

Which by the way, Jesus said it's more blessed to give than to receive.

    38:28-38:30

There's only one way to find out if that's true, and that's to try it.

    38:32-38:35

And you'll find that there's no greater joy than giving.

    38:37-38:39

But you also get to experience another joy.

    38:40-38:43

That's the joy of not being a slave to stuff.

    38:45-38:47

Not being a slave? I'm not a slave to that.

    38:47-38:53

If my bank account has a dollar in it, or if my bank account has ten million dollars in it, it doesn't matter. I'm not a slave to the stuff.

    38:56-39:00

Pardon the pun. You can't put a price tag on how valuable that is.

    39:00-39:25

blessing it's so if you want to get back on track need to examine how you're given because being faithful to God according to him being faithful to God is good for your wall and it's good for your soul let's pray father in heaven This is a tough passage, Father.

    39:28-39:33

Not to understand, but to apply.

    39:35-39:38

And Father, we try to explain our way around it.

    39:38-39:54

We try to find loopholes or excuses or try to spiritualize some things when you've made it very clear that if we are going to be faithful to give to you, you are going to be faithful to give to us.

    39:55-39:57

And there is incredible joy when that happens.

    40:00-40:02

So Father, I pray there's somebody here today.

    40:04-40:13

There's somebody here today, Father, that's like, "You know, I didn't know this, and I've never tried this." I pray today is the day that they say, "You know what? I am going to put God to the test on this.

    40:13-40:19

I am going to see if this is true." God, I know you're going to show yourself faithful.

    40:21-40:32

I'm not losing a minute's sleep wondering if you're going to provide for the person that's going to trust you first, give to you first.

    40:35-40:42

Father, there might be somebody here who hasn't been on track in their walk with you because this is an area they refuse to let go.

    40:42-40:44

Maybe they become like that rich young ruler.

    40:45-40:48

I pray today they become like Zacchaeus.

    40:50-40:53

Thank you God for all that you provide.

    40:55-40:58

May we never lose sight of the fact that it's all yours anyways.

    41:00-41:02

We're not taking any of it with us.

    41:03-41:08

We just have a few years on this earth to manage what you allow to pass through our hands.

    41:09-41:13

Find us faithful, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Malachi 3:6-15

  1. Why is "getting on track" with giving so important towards "getting back on track" with God? What does this say about our attitude towards money?

  2. What does the New Testament say about "how to give" (see 2 Corinthians 8:3)? How would you respond to someone who says, "You don't have to tithe, that's Old Testament Law."

  3. Why do you think God wants tested in the area of giving? How can YOU test Him (specifically) as He called you to?

  4. The more you give to God, the more God gives to you. Why is this so? How would you respond to someone who doesn’t believe that?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another. Ask, "How have you been doing getting 'Back on Track'?" What area that Malachi addresses (so far in our series) has impacted you the most? (worship, marriage, holiness, giving)

  • 00:48-00:52

Big stuff this morning as we turn to God's Word.

    00:52-00:57

Open up with me to the book of Malachi, in chapter 2.

    00:59-01:04

While you're turning there, the Bible says to give honor to who honor is due.

    01:04-01:10

And when I came in here this morning, I saw that we have two special guests with us all the way from Kentucky.

    01:11-01:16

And these are two people that had a huge impact on my life and on my walk with the Lord.

    01:17-01:20

So Frank and Susanna, would you stand up, please?

    01:21-01:24

I didn't tell them ahead of time, but you guys, it is so good to see you.

    01:29-01:35

It is so good to see you guys, and thanks for being with us today, and thank you for everything that you've done.

    01:35-01:42

The Lord has used you guys so huge in my life, and I thank God for you.

    01:43-01:45

All right, Malachi chapter two, are you there?

    01:46-01:46

    You're still turning there.

    01:47-01:49

the last book before the New Testament.

    01:50-01:56

You know, about a month ago, our family was going to Kohl's.

    01:56-02:01

Now, I don't know if you know this, but Kohl's does this thing where they give you Kohl's cash.

    02:01-02:03

How many people are aware of the Kohl's cash?

    02:04-02:05

Oh, okay, like most of you.

    02:06-02:20

I don't know how this program works, but they basically send you money and say, "Come and spend this at our store." And my wife's like, "It's gonna expire, "so we gotta go spend it." And I'm always like, why doesn't Taco Bell have a program like that for me?

    02:21-02:22

    One can hope.

    02:23-02:32

Anyways, I dropped Aaron off at Kohl's and I took the kids to Five Below because we like to -- you know what Five Below is, the dollar store for rich people.

    02:32-02:38

So we ran around Five Below and we'd throw the footballs and play with all the stuff until we'd get thrown out.

    02:39-02:50

So then we went to pick up Aaron, and as I was walking in with our two boys -- and if you don't know, our boys are 12 and 11, and my younger son, K, as we're walking in, he just, we get into Cole's and he just takes off.

    02:52-02:55

And I thought to myself, here's a teachable moment.

    02:56-03:13

So I just ducked behind one of the clothes racks because I wanted him to get far enough ahead that he had one of those like holy cow moments where his dad, to teach him that he should stick a little closer to his father.

    03:14-03:27

And we had that moment, I was watching him, he's just running off by himself, and all of a sudden I could see him stop, and I saw this, he was like, "Dad? Dad?" And then the panic set in his face.

    03:27-03:30

And I let that rest for a little bit, okay?

    03:30-03:41

Like I let him panic, and then I stepped out, and I'm like, "Here I am." And he did not enjoy that at all, but he's like, "Why are you telling us this horrible parenting story.

    03:42-03:47

Because the truth is, a lot of us in our walk with the Lord, a lot of us are like Kate.

    03:49-03:52

We know that we're supposed to stick close to the Father, right?

    03:53-03:56

We know with the Father is the safe place and the place we need to be.

    03:56-03:59

But sometimes we just sort of aren't paying attention.

    04:00-04:05

Or we allow sin a place in our lives, or whatever the case.

    04:05-04:06

    But we find ourselves drifting.

    04:06-04:08

And all of a sudden, we're like, wait a minute.

    04:08-04:11

I don't want to be here. I want to be close to my father.

    04:11-04:14

I need to get back on track, right?

    04:14-04:20

I need to... and see, like in that story, the father never took his eyes off of the son.

    04:21-04:22

I was with him the whole time.

    04:22-04:24

He was the one that was drifting.

    04:25-04:42

And I was the one that's like, "Hey, I'm right here. I'm right here." That's why the series we're going through in Malachi is called "Getting Back on Track." because we're studying a period in the history of Israel where the nation had gotten way off track again.

    04:44-04:46

And God sends Malachi to get them back on track.

    04:46-04:49

That's what the Bible calls repentance.

    04:49-04:50

Remember, we've been talking about that.

    04:50-04:54

Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change in conduct.

    04:56-05:00

We saw, first of all, Malachi, to get back on track, you need to get back to real worship.

    05:01-05:02

    Remember what real worship is?

    05:03-05:07

It's you breathe in God's love, right?

    05:08-05:13

And you breathe out reverence for God.

    05:13-05:18

That's worship, living in his love and breathing out that reverence for him.

    05:19-05:27

Last week we saw getting back on track means married people, you need to get back to your marriage commitment because God made it crystal clear.

    05:27-05:31

If you're not being faithful in your marriage, you're not being faithful to him.

    05:32-05:35

We saw that very clearly in the text last week.

    05:35-05:37

Faithless in marriage is faithless to God.

    05:38-05:40

Look at verse 17 in chapter 2. Are you there?

    05:42-05:51

Verse 17 says, "You have wearied the Lord with your words." Let's just stop right there and try to wrap our brains around the magnitude of that statement.

    05:51-05:55

Do you know the Bible says that God is the only person that doesn't get tired?

    05:57-06:37

My son asked me, "Dad, why do we have to sleep?" I said because that's our daily reminder that we are not God Because the Bible says only God never gets tired but here in this passage God's like I'm you've worn me out and Literally what God is saying in this passages I am out of patience with you I am completely worn out with you parents any parents ever said that to your kids. I'm worn out with you. Oh Just me just me Just okay. Griah, okay You're like, "No, Pastor Jeff, we want to hear more stories about what a horrible parent you are." Sorry, well maybe you can use this information to share with other bad parents that you might know.

    06:39-07:09

But God says, "You have worn me out!" And you say, "How have we wearied him?" By saying, "Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he delights in them." Or by asking, "Where is the God of justice?" God says, "I'm tired of hearing these accusations." He says, "Your words have worn me out." What words?

    07:09-07:10

Well, you saw the questions here.

    07:11-07:15

Check out these questions because these sort of set the stage for everything that follows.

    07:16-07:20

God says, "I'm worn out with this constant accusation.

    07:20-07:32

who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord and he delights in them." You realize what a horrific statement that is. Saying God loves sin. He must love it.

    07:34-08:22

God must love watching people sin. And then the question, "Where is the God of justice?" Understand this isn't honest seeking. Okay, God's all about honest seeking. If you're like, "God, I don't understand what you're doing and I want know you and I want to I want to understand this isn't honest seeking this is what we would call jerky questioning where's the God of justice Oh God's a God of justice okay where is he where is he God cares so much about justice doesn't he where is he I don't see it I'll be honest I don't see it I don't see it God loves sin here's the summary statement of what the accusation God must love sin because He's not doing anything about it.

    08:22-08:23

    That's basically what they're saying.

    08:24-08:24

    He must love it.

    08:25-08:29

God must delight in sin because He's not doing anything about it.

    08:31-08:34

Do you think that thought ever crosses the minds of people today?

    08:36-08:38

    Every ISIS attack.

    08:39-08:41

We live in a day that you can watch them online.

    08:44-08:45

Why isn't God doing something about them?

    08:45-08:57

every abortion. Why isn't God doing something about that? He must not mind, he must not mind the murder of infants because he's not doing anything about it.

    08:57-09:58

Maybe he likes it. This debacle in Charlottesville last week, you've been following this in the news? The wickedness of racism, the hatred. God must enjoy watching black people and white people tear each other apart because he certainly didn't do anything about it. He must enjoy watching that because he's doing nothing. And when you start to doubt God's love, when you start to doubt God's love, it's easy to just fall into your own favorite sin because you rationalize it like this, "Well God's not doing anything about sin, so what the I'll just do what I want to do. I'm not going to ask for a show of hands like how many people have ever thought that because I guarantee you every one of us have been tempted in that way. Say, God must not care so I don't care either.

    10:00-10:11

You see God gave us his word. God gave us his word as the standard to distinguish reality from illusion.

    10:13-10:16

And I'm going to blow the cover on the biggest illusion that exists in the world today.

    10:16-10:18

And here's the biggest illusion. Are you ready?

    10:19-10:23

The biggest illusion is this, sin has no consequences.

    10:24-10:25

    That's the biggest illusion.

    10:26-10:28

    Sin has no consequences.

    10:30-10:35

Do you think Israel was under this illusion when Malachi was speaking these words?

    10:35-10:44

Absolutely, they are. You'd think the United States of America is under this illusion in our day.

    10:46-10:59

Sin has no consequences. Sin has no consequences in my personal conduct, my personal walk with the Lord, my personal holiness we're going to talk about today. Those things are all irrelevant.

    11:01-11:10

That's the illusion, because the truth is when it comes to your personal walk with the Lord, it matters greatly to God, and it should matter greatly to you.

    11:11-11:19

So on your outline, personal holiness, letting God deal with my sin, I'm going to give you the whole outline right now, okay?

    11:21-11:34

Because really, when it comes to God dealing with your sin, you have two choices. We're going to see it in the text. There's two choices, Because first of all, we have to establish all of us by nature are sinners.

    11:36-11:36

    By nature.

    11:37-11:41

We've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, the Bible says.

    11:43-11:46

And if you are wanting to dispute that, I don't think I can help you.

    11:48-11:50

It's clear that we all have a sin problem by nature.

    11:52-11:55

So here's your two choices, letting God deal with my sin.

    11:55-11:59

You can be refined or you can be judged. You have the choice.

    11:59-12:02

You can be refined or you can be judged.

    12:04-12:06

But first of all, number one, let's talk about this.

    12:06-12:07

    You can be refined.

    12:08-12:08

    Number one.

    12:09-12:10

Now we're going to do a little Bible study here.

    12:10-12:11

    You ready?

    12:12-12:17

Now, sometimes, let's be honest, sometimes it's hard to understand some Old Testament prophecy.

    12:18-12:19

And I'm going to explain to you why.

    12:21-12:30

Because the Old Testament prophets, They saw the coming of the Messiah as one event.

    12:31-12:40

And because of where we live in history, looking back in history, and also looking ahead because of prophecy, we understand that the coming of the Messiah is actually two events.

    12:41-12:44

But understand in the Old Testament, they never saw that.

    12:44-12:47

Here's what they saw. The Messiah comes, the Messiah suffers, the Messiah reigns.

    12:48-12:52

Every prophecy in the Old Testament, the Messiah comes, the Messiah suffers, the Messiah reigns over all the earth.

    12:52-12:54

The Messiah comes, the Messiah suffers, the Messiah reigns.

    12:56-13:03

There's a couple thousand years between the coming and suffering of the Messiah and the reigning of the Messiah.

    13:04-13:06

    But they didn't see that.

    13:07-13:10

There's not one verse in the Old Testament about the church. Not one.

    13:11-13:14

They had no idea about this church age that we live in. They didn't see it.

    13:15-13:28

And Jesus said in Matthew 13 that the church age is a mystery, meaning it was not revealed before, but Jesus said, "I'm revealing it to you now." In the parables of Matthew 13, Jesus talked about the church age.

    13:28-13:39

So, when we go through the Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah, some are about his first coming, and some are about his second coming.

    13:40-13:41

    Okay, does that make sense?

    13:42-13:46

They just saw it as one event, but we know it's two, for sure.

    13:47-13:51

You're like, "Well, how do I know the difference?" It's easy.

    13:52-14:00

When I read Old Testament prophecy about the Messiah, I just ask myself this question, did Jesus do that the first time he came?

    14:01-14:05

If the answer is yes, I'm like, okay, that prophecy is about his first coming.

    14:06-14:09

If I'm reading a prophecy and I say, did Jesus do that the first time he came?

    14:09-14:10

    And the answer is no.

    14:11-14:13

Okay, well, then that applies to a second coming.

    14:13-14:13

    Pretty easy, right?

    14:15-15:16

It gets tricky reading it though, because sometimes we'll see here, be like in the same verse covering both advents of the Messiah. Okay, chapter 3 look at the verse 1. Now understand this is God's response to the question. Now this chapter and verse breaks, you know, those aren't the inspired part. Those were added later for convenience so it's not like Israel asked this question, "Where's the God of justice?" And God's like, "Okay, chapter 3 on to the next thing." "We never We're answered our question. This is the answer to the question Check out God's answer God says behold I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me Now this messenger refers to John the Baptist Scripture makes that crystal clear Matthew 3 Matthew 11 Matthew 17 John the Baptist came in the spirit and power of Elijah We're going to see it again in Malachi 4-5 when we get there.

    15:16-15:18

    Luke 1-17.

    15:20-15:25

God says, "I'm sending this messenger to prepare the way before me." Like, what's going on there?

    15:25-15:38

Well, understand, back in biblical times, when a king was traveling, he would send somebody ahead of him to clear the way, make sure there are no potholes or danger or trees down in the road.

    15:38-15:44

He would go ahead so that the king could just have a smooth path right along the way.

    15:45-15:47

He prepared the way for the King to come.

    15:48-15:50

John the Baptist fulfilled that, interestingly.

    15:50-15:54

How did John the Baptist prepare the way for Jesus Christ to come?

    15:56-16:04

See, God's like, "I'm going to show up on the earth personally in the form of a man, and somebody's going to go ahead of me." How did John the Baptist prepare the way?

    16:05-16:06

He prepared the way by preaching what?

    16:06-16:08

What was John the Baptist's sermon?

    16:09-16:09

    Repentance, right?

    16:10-16:18

John the Baptist shows up, he goes, "Hey, the Messiah is coming. You better..." What's this sermon series? "Get back on track. Repent." Right?

    16:18-16:21

"You better get back on track. You better repent.

    16:21-16:31

You better change your mind about some things, because about 15 minutes behind me, the King is coming." Look on here with me. Chapter 3, verse 1.

    16:31-16:34

It says, "And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple.

    16:35-16:45

And the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming," It says, "The Lord of hosts." Okay, this is obviously from the context, he's talking about a different messenger.

    16:46-16:50

This messenger here is Jesus Christ himself, the messenger of the new covenants.

    16:52-16:56

Verse 2, "But who can endure the day of his coming?

    16:57-16:59

And who can stand when he appears?

    17:01-17:07

For he is like a refiner's fire and like fuller's soap.

    17:08-17:17

He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and He will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them like gold and silver.

    17:18-17:21

And they will bring offerings and righteousness to the Lord.

    17:22-17:42

Then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years." Okay, so this purifying of the nation of Israel, and once again offering righteous sacrifices before the Lord, has that happened yet?

    17:43-17:46

    No, so that's future, right?

    17:46-17:52

God promises there's going to be a nationwide restoration of the nation of Israel.

    17:55-17:59

So God's answer to their question, "Where is the God of justice?" He's on His way.

    18:00-18:01

    He's on His way.

    18:02-18:07

And He might not be who you're expecting, because He is a refiner and He's a purifier.

    18:09-18:10

Now, this is a show of hands question.

    18:11-18:12

How many people here need refined?

    18:13-18:14

    Who needs refined?

    18:14-18:16

I do. Both hands up. I do.

    18:16-18:21

I need refined, because we all have this sin problem.

    18:22-18:28

And the point of God's answer here is, He has a plan to purify His people, and the plan is a person.

    18:29-18:30

    Jesus Christ.

    18:33-18:37

See, Jesus Christ, listen, if you're sitting here today, you don't know Him as your Lord and Savior.

    18:39-18:40

He wants you to come as you are.

    18:42-18:46

He will take you as you are, but He loves you too much to leave you that way.

    18:47-18:53

And that's what the Lord is pointing out here, like, "Look, my people that I'm taking, I'm going to refine them.

    18:54-19:00

I'm going to purify them. I'm going to cleanse them." That's why we're talking about holiness today.

    19:01-19:08

Now, when we talk about holiness, I think some people think of stained glass and pipe organs.

    19:09-19:12

    Holiness means morally blameless.

    19:13-19:15

It means totally separated from sin.

    19:16-19:55

God Himself is inherently holy, meaning that God always knows what is right, and God always does what is right, Because that is always consistent with his character But the tough pill for us to swallow As God commands us to be holy did you know that Old Testament and new Leviticus 1144 first Peter 116 God says you shall be holy For I am holy You say well that sounds pretty serious oh Oh, it gets more serious.

    19:55-20:05

Hebrews 12, 14 says, "Without holiness, no one will see the Lord." If you are not holy, if you are not holy, you will never see the Lord.

    20:07-20:08

So do you see the problem?

    20:10-20:14

The problem with holiness is God requires it.

    20:16-20:19

We don't have it, and we can't get it.

    20:20-20:22

So what shot do we have?

    20:25-20:26

    God gives it to us.

    20:27-20:28

    That's where it comes from.

    20:30-20:31

And you see, that's the definition of grace.

    20:32-20:32

    What is grace?

    20:33-20:37

Grace is God giving to you what he requires from you.

    20:38-20:46

God says, "I require you to be holy and righteous." You're like, "Well, I sure don't have that." And God in His grace says, "Well, I'm going to give you holiness.

    20:47-20:52

I'm going to give you righteousness because I require it from you.

    20:52-20:53

    That's grace.

    20:55-20:58

    Like, wow, that's pretty amazing.

    20:58-20:59

How holy does God make me?

    20:59-21:01

Holy is my grandma because she was pretty holy.

    21:03-21:04

    Holier than your grandma.

    21:04-21:10

You're like, well, do you mean like as holy as the preacher from my old church?

    21:10-21:12

Because that guy was no holier than that.

    21:13-21:15

How holy does God make us?

    21:17-21:22

in His gift. This is one of my favorite verses in the whole Bible, 2nd Corinthians 5 21.

    21:24-21:35

For our sake, He, that's God the Father, made Him, that's God the Son, sin will replace those pronouns, for our sake, God made Jesus to be sin.

    21:36-21:43

Who knew no sin? So that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God.

    21:43-21:48

And understand, this is the only option you have of obtaining holiness.

    21:49-21:55

Jesus Christ says, "I will make you a trade." And this is the wildest trade in history.

    21:55-22:14

Jesus says, "Here's the trade. You give me all your sin, all your guilt, all your shame. I'll take that." That's why it says, "God made Jesus to be sin." Okay, so I want you to picture in your mind's eye Jesus Christ on the cross.

    22:14-22:19

When He was hanging there, God was punishing Him.

    22:19-22:32

God the Father was punishing Him for every sin you've ever committed, every sin I've ever committed, every thoughtless, irresponsible, wicked, rebellious thought, action, attitude.

    22:32-22:35

God was pouring out His wrath on Jesus Christ.

    22:35-22:38

That's what was agonizing Christ about going to the cross.

    22:38-23:10

wasn't the physical pain Jesus knew he was going to be bearing the wrath of God for my sin notice it says he made him to be sent who knew no sin it's important to understand Jesus never sinned because if Jesus sinned if Jesus sinned and he was on the cross you're like well he got what was coming to him he was sinless and that is what made him uniquely qualified to take our sin he was paying that he didn't know!

    23:11-23:13

Because we owed a penalty that we couldn't pay.

    23:14-23:19

On the cross, Jesus took my sin and your sin, He took that on Himself.

    23:19-23:21

And look at the trade here.

    23:21-23:27

So that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God.

    23:29-23:34

So how righteous does God make you when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

    23:35-23:36

How righteous does He make you?

    23:36-23:40

The answer biblically is God sees you as righteous as Himself.

    23:42-23:43

And I've shared this with you before.

    23:44-23:47

This is the most mind-blowing concept in the entire Bible to me.

    23:48-23:57

That God would look at me and say, "You are completely righteous." I've never struggled with creation or the Trinity or any of those things.

    23:57-24:01

Like, "Okay, that's what the Bible says." But this thing here just blows my mind.

    24:02-24:12

that God would pronounce you as righteous as Himself, because of His gift of grace, His gift of holiness.

    24:14-24:19

We're going to pause right now, because I want the reality and the magnitude of this to set in.

    24:19-24:25

Darren, if you come up here, and if our ushers would come forward, we're going to receive the Lord's Supper.

    24:26-24:27

You're right in the middle of the message.

    24:29-24:30

And we're going to receive this.

    24:31-24:35

I want you to hold on to the elements as they're passed out.

    24:35-24:37

We're going to receive this together.

    24:38-24:39

    But this is our opportunity.

    24:40-24:41

    We're going to pause.

    24:42-24:44

You see, taking this doesn't make us holy.

    24:44-24:46

The reason we do this is this is a reminder.

    24:48-24:50

This is a reminder of who made us holy.

    24:51-24:55

And this is a reminder of how he made us holy.

    24:56-24:58

The freshers would pass out the elements, hold on.

    24:58-25:00

We'll receive the Lord's Supper together.

    25:01-25:13

This is a reminder that holiness, right standing before God, righteousness, forgiveness, we couldn't get that ourselves.

    25:15-25:19

But Jesus Christ said, "This is my body, which is given for you.

    25:20-25:39

Eat this in remembrance of me." And this messenger of the covenant we saw here in Malachi 3, Jesus said, "Here's the covenant. This is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for the forgiveness of sin.

    25:40-25:43

Drink this in remembrance of me." Amen.

    25:45-25:48

    Holiness, you can be refined.

    25:50-25:56

I mentioned this briefly last week, but holiness is a reality and a process.

    25:58-25:59

    It's a reality and a process.

    26:00-26:02

Remember last week we talked about that.

    26:02-26:12

If I went and enlisted in the army today, soon as I signed my name on the documents, you could say, "Okay, you're a soldier now." Then why in the world am I going to bootcamp?

    26:13-26:15

Because we're going to make you a soldier.

    26:16-26:18

It's a reality and a process at the same time.

    26:18-26:19

So it is with marriage, right?

    26:19-26:21

    God pronounces you one.

    26:21-26:23

You're no longer two, but one.

    26:24-26:29

And your married life together as husbands and wives is the two of you becoming one.

    26:29-26:31

    It's a reality and it's a process.

    26:31-26:34

    Holiness is the same way.

    26:34-26:35

    It's a reality.

    26:36-26:41

When you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God pronounces you holy.

    26:43-26:49

And the rest of your life on earth is becoming that which God has already pronounced you.

    26:50-26:54

You say, but if this is a work of God, what can I do about it?

    26:54-26:56

How can I have a part in this?

    26:56-26:58

Why am I listening to this message?

    26:58-26:59

    Is this just FYI?

    26:59-27:04

Well, first of all, you have to be born again.

    27:05-27:14

Okay, if you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, if you're not born again, any of these things that we talk about today are just going to be exercises in futility.

    27:14-27:17

You don't have the power, you don't have the resources, you're not going to be able to pull it off.

    27:19-27:29

It starts with saying, "God, I realize that I'm a sinner, and I can't save myself, and I am crying out to you for the mercy that you've shown us in Jesus Christ.

    27:29-27:33

I want to receive him, Father, as my Lord and Savior.

    27:34-27:38

When you do that, the Bible says, God's spirit lives within you.

    27:40-27:49

So your part of growing in holiness is learning to walk by the spirit.

    27:51-27:52

Like, well, how does that happen?

    27:53-27:55

It starts with knowing the word of God.

    27:57-28:01

That's how it starts. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.

    28:02-28:10

Your growth in the Lord starts with knowing the Word of God, and it's cooperating with the Holy Spirit within you.

    28:12-28:24

Somehow the Holy Spirit works with the Word to empower you to make choices of obedience to live out your identity in Jesus Christ.

    28:25-28:29

I'm going to say that again, because this is what it means to grow in holiness.

    28:30-28:43

The Holy Spirit works with the Word of God to empower you to make choices of obedience, to live out your identity in Christ.

    28:45-28:47

Like, well, how does that look day to day?

    28:48-28:54

Walking in the Spirit, a lot of times, is about saying yes and no.

    28:56-28:58

I'm going to give you two scriptures. I want you to write these down.

    28:58-28:59

I want you to meditate on these.

    28:59-29:11

Ephesians 4.30 says, "And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption." Holy Spirit, He is God. He is God living inside you.

    29:13-29:15

And the Bible says that you can grieve Him.

    29:17-29:19

Like, well, how do you grieve him?

    29:19-29:23

You grieve the Holy Spirit when he tells you not to do something and you do it anyways.

    29:25-29:27

And the Holy Spirit says, "Don't, don't lose your temper.

    29:28-29:29

    Don't lose your temper.

    29:30-29:34

Why don't you stop and pray? Don't lose your temper." And you're like, "Heck with it. I'm losing my temper.

    29:34-29:38

I'm blowing up at that person." You've just said no to the Holy Spirit. That grieves the Holy Spirit.

    29:38-29:41

That's why I understand this. That's why Christians feel guilty sometimes.

    29:42-29:45

You're not guilty in the sense of now you are condemned for your sin again.

    29:45-29:48

you feel guilty, that's the spirit within you grieving.

    29:49-29:57

Like I very clearly told you not to do that and you chose to do it anyways. You're grieving the spirit.

    29:58-30:47

When the Holy Spirit says you shouldn't be looking at that garbage on your computer, men, you say, "Well, one more time." Or, "Well, I'm not sure it's really, is this really necessarily sinful looking at this stuff?" And you try to justify it and question God's Word, which never got anywhere good. The Holy Spirit says don't do that. You do it anyways you are grieving the Holy Spirit. That's why you feel that, that's why you feel that sense of self-disgust as a Christian when you sin because you're grieving God's Holy Spirit within you. So when the Holy Spirit says don't and you do it anyways you're grieving the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5.19 says do not quench the Spirit. What does that mean? Well that's sort of the other side of the That's when the Holy Spirit is telling you to do something and you don't do it.

    30:49-30:52

Like when the Holy Spirit is saying, "You know, you need to get involved in ministry down at that church.

    30:53-30:59

You know, they've been talking about this outreach at Tomorrow's Home for Youth and you need to get involved in that." And you're like, "No, no, no.

    31:00-31:03

Excuse, excuse, excuse." You're quenching the Spirit.

    31:04-31:12

The Spirit's trying to fire you up and you're just taking a big bucket of water, dumping it on, dumping it on, when you say no to the Holy Spirit.

    31:13-31:15

the Holy Spirit says, "You know what? You need to reconcile with that person.

    31:16-31:30

You have an unforgiving spirit towards that person and you need to go to them and you need to reconcile." Say, "No, no, no. When they come to me first and I'm not ready for that, I'm going to..." You're quenching the Spirit.

    31:31-31:36

So as you learn to walk in the Spirit, you're going to see God refining you.

    31:38-31:41

Finally for today, Here's the other option.

    31:43-31:45

You can be refined, or you can be judged.

    31:47-31:56

And I think it's necessary to discuss this, because there might be somebody sitting here saying, "What if I'm not interested in being refined?

    31:57-32:00

What if I'm not interested in all this holiness stuff you're talking about?

    32:00-32:02

What if I don't want to be made holy? What if I...

    32:02-32:04

Hey, look, what if I want to live life by my own terms?

    32:05-32:12

What if I want to do what I want to do, instead of having God tell me what to do?" If that's your choice, I got good news and bad news for you.

    32:12-32:14

The good news is you can do that.

    32:14-32:15

    You totally have that option.

    32:15-32:16

    You can do that.

    32:18-32:20

The bad news is it's not going to end well for you.

    32:21-32:22

    Look at verse five.

    32:24-32:31

The Lord says, "Then I will draw near to you for judgment." Again, this is talking about end times, restoration of Israel.

    32:31-32:34

God says, "I'm coming to refine, but I'm also coming to what?

    32:34-32:35

    To judge.

    32:36-32:37

Then I will draw near to you for judgment.

    32:39-33:06

I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, meaning oppressing those people too, against those who thrust aside the Sojourner and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

    33:06-33:15

Quickly, we could do a sermon on each one of these going to, but he gives five representative sins. Sorcerers, first of all. Sorcerers.

    33:16-33:50

The Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Old Testament, translates this word pharmacos, which is where we get the word, any guesses? Pharmacy. And that was very common to use drugs for occultic purposes. Like, oh, Pastor Jeff, that's so first century. People don't do that anymore. You are dead wrong. I know somebody that came out of that. And she said, "Yeah, that's what we would do. The drugs would open our minds to the spirit realm." She said it was extremely occultic.

    33:54-33:59

Adulterers. Adulterers. Sexuality expressed however I feel like it.

    34:01-34:04

    No rules, right? No rules.

    34:06-34:07

Boy, there's a word for our culture today.

    34:09-34:12

Those who swear falsely, you're a liar, you don't keep your word.

    34:13-34:21

God says, "Judgment's coming. I'm coming near to you, too." Next up, taking advantage, we'll just say taking advantage of the helpless.

    34:22-34:25

You know, you see this list of people that you should be helping.

    34:26-34:28

Instead, you use them for your own advantage.

    34:29-34:50

God notices that. Turn aside the sojourner. No compassion. There it is again, no compassion for those in need. Best of luck to you kid, you're on your own. No compassion. Then the last phrase really is the summary statement, right? Do not fear me. People that don't fear God, that just sums it up, doesn't it?

    34:51-35:18

It takes us back to reverence we talked about a couple of weeks ago. You see, just Just as the refiner's fire separates the metal from the impurities, and just as the soap separates the garment from the dirt, God is ultimately going to cleanse His people by separating them from sin/sinners.

    35:20-35:21

    So your choice is this.

    35:22-35:27

You can know God as a refiner, or you can know God as a judge.

    35:30-35:35

Refining can be a painful process, but it has a great result.

    35:38-35:40

    Judging is painful for eternity.

    35:41-35:45

As we wrap up here, you know, life, let's just be honest, life is hard.

    35:48-35:55

And sometimes, as I said at the beginning of this message, I've been tempted to ask the same questions that Israel was asking in verse 17.

    35:57-35:59

    Why isn't God doing something?

    36:00-36:02

Have I tried to follow God for nothing?

    36:05-36:06

Does it even matter what I do?

    36:08-36:11

Because you know, honestly, wicked people seem better off than me.

    36:12-36:13

    You ever thought that?

    36:15-36:17

My neighbor doesn't give a rip about God.

    36:18-36:20

It's just like that guy wins the lottery like three times a day.

    36:22-36:23

    Does God even care?

    36:24-36:26

I'd like you to go back, look at verse 3.

    36:27-36:29

    God's Word is so specific.

    36:29-36:30

    Look at verse 3.

    36:31-36:35

It says, "He will sit as a refiner and purifier of..." what?

    36:37-36:37

    Silver.

    36:38-36:44

So I did a little studying this week on how silver is refined and purified.

    36:44-36:48

I'm not going to give you the whole chemical process, okay?

    36:48-36:50

But I do want to give you the overview.

    36:51-36:53

The silver ore is placed in intense heat.

    36:55-36:58

And the intense heat burns off the dross.

    36:58-36:59

    What is dross?

    36:59-37:03

Well, dross is basically the scum on molten metal.

    37:04-37:17

And as that refiner, as that purifier of the silver is sitting and burning the silver, The question is, how does he know when he's done?

    37:18-37:20

How does he know when that silver is purified?

    37:22-37:26

And the answer to that question completely blew my mind as it's going to blow yours.

    37:28-37:35

The refiner knows that he's done and the silver is purified when he can see his reflection in the silver.

    37:37-37:45

And I want to encourage you today, church, whatever hardships you're facing, And I know some of you are facing some very severe hardships right now.

    37:46-37:49

The hardships that you are facing are like fire.

    37:51-37:56

Because God is using them to refine you.

    37:58-38:04

And God sees the refining is working on you when He sees His reflection in you.

    38:05-38:08

God's goal for you is to make you more and more like Jesus Christ.

    38:09-38:14

every moment, every day, every step, more and more like his son.

    38:16-38:32

So with his hand on the thermostat, God is refining you one degree at a time, one hardship at a time, one day at a time, until he sees his reflection in you.

    38:34-38:39

So let God make you into what he's already pronounced you to be.

    38:40-38:40

    And that's holy.

    38:41-38:42

    Let's pray.

    38:43-38:48

Father in heaven, we thank you for the pronouncement of holiness.

    38:48-38:53

But honestly, God, sometimes it's hard to say thank you for the refining process because it hurts.

    38:55-38:59

It is painful and it always seems to last too long.

    39:01-39:04

But remind us today, God, that you are the one with your hand on the thermostat.

    39:06-39:12

You are the one looking at us, looking for your reflection in the silver, so to speak.

    39:14-39:23

But while the trials are unpleasant, might we find a renewed sense of joy in the purposes you are going to accomplish through them.

    39:25-39:28

God, I pray today that we would be a people who would embrace you as a refiner.

    39:29-39:35

I pray, Father, we would be horrified at the thought of having to face you as a judge.

    39:37-39:50

And if there's somebody here who doesn't know you, I pray that you wouldn't give them a minute's rest until they embrace the grace that you've poured out in Jesus Christ, so that they will never have to experience you as a judge.

    39:52-39:59

Father, we thank you for your faithfulness to us. We see it in Israel. We see it in our day.

    39:59-40:20

That's why we're going through this text. We are by nature, we are wayward people, yet you continue to pursue us. You continue to refine us. You are faithful. You are committed even when we are not. Turn our hearts to you, Father. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Read Malachi 2:17-3:5

  1. In your own words, summarize the problems stated in Mal 2:17. How do you see these same problems in our culture?

  2. How would you summarize God’s answer (Mal 3:1-5) to the questions in Mal 2:17?

  3. What does it mean that God is a refiner (Mal 3:2-3)? How does God refine His people? How will God ultimately refine all His people (Mal 3:3-4)?

Breakout Questions:

What areas need "burned" off of you to make you more like Christ?
Go around, state the area needing refined, and pray over these things.

  • 00:48-00:50

Turn in your Bibles to the book of Malachi 2.

    00:51-00:53

It's the last book of the Old Testament.

    00:54-01:00

While you're turning there, you know, I heard this story of this man who was looking for a job.

    01:00-01:10

And the only job he could find, which he took because he needed the money, but the only job he could find was painting the yellow lines on the road.

    01:13-01:17

You're like, "That doesn't sound too bad." They didn't have any machinery for him.

    01:17-01:25

So when he showed up for work the first day, they gave him a giant bucket of yellow paint and a paintbrush.

    01:27-01:35

And they said, "Get to work." And he said, "Well, I'm just glad to have a job and earn some money." So he went to work and he showed up to his boss the first day, at the end of the day.

    01:36-01:43

His boss said, "How much did you get done?" The guy said, "I got about six miles painted today." The boss said, "Six miles? That's incredible!

    01:44-01:50

"That is fantastic! We'll see you tomorrow." So the man shows up the next day at work and goes right to work.

    01:51-02:01

He shows up at the end of the day and his boss says, "Well, how many miles did you paint today?" And the guy says, "I got four miles painted today." And the boss says, "Huh, that's still pretty good.

    02:01-02:09

I mean, it's quite a bit less than yesterday, but that's still pretty good." Well, on the third day, the man shows up to work again at the end of the day.

    02:09-02:23

He shows up to his boss and his boss says, "Well, how much did you get painted today?" And the man said, "I got about 500 feet painted today." And the boss says, "I'm sorry, but that's just not gonna cut it.

    02:23-02:24

    And I don't understand.

    02:24-02:34

I don't understand how on the first day you set a record, we're three days into the job and you put out a lousy performance.

    02:34-02:42

Why in the world is your job performance getting worse and worse and worse every day?" And the guy says, "You know what? I really don't know either.

    02:42-02:56

I guess it's just because I keep getting further and further away from the bucket." And as a joke, that's mildly funny, but as a metaphor, I think about that often.

    02:59-03:11

That when we feel distant from God, it's not that God moved, it's that we, by our own choices, are getting ourselves further and further away, and our walks with Him.

    03:11-03:15

And as we turn to Malachi, we see that Israel had gotten off track again.

    03:16-03:20

And God called this preacher Malachi to get them back on track.

    03:20-03:22

    That's what we call repentance.

    03:23-03:29

Repentance literally is a change in your mind that results in a change in your conduct.

    03:30-03:32

You say, "I was doing this, and God says it's wrong.

    03:32-03:34

I need to think about it the way God does.

    03:35-03:39

So if this is wrong, then I need to change my behavior." That's repentance.

    03:41-03:47

God is saying to Israel through Malachi and to us through His Word today, you need to get back on track.

    03:47-03:50

Some of us here are not on track with the Lord right now.

    03:51-03:54

Once upon a time, you had a vibrant and exciting walk with God.

    03:54-03:55

    You saw God at work.

    03:55-03:57

You loved praying. You loved reading God's Word.

    03:57-03:58

    You loved coming to church.

    03:59-04:04

And now you just give it a big "meh." I'm just not really on track right now in my life.

    04:05-04:06

It's time to get back on track.

    04:08-04:08

    How do I do that?

    04:09-04:12

Well, last week we saw in chapter 1, you've got to get back to real worship.

    04:14-04:17

We saw that worship is really just as easy as breathing, isn't it?

    04:17-04:26

It's breathing in God's love and breathing out reverence for God.

    04:26-04:28

We talked about that last week.

    04:29-04:30

    Giving God your best.

    04:31-04:33

Not just going through the motions.

    04:34-04:38

And you get through chapter 1 and you're like, That's a really convicting word of Scripture.

    04:38-04:42

And we get to chapter 2 and God says, "I'm not finished." Look at chapter 2, verses 1 and 2.

    04:45-04:47

"And now, O priest, this command is for you.

    04:48-05:01

If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart, to give honor to My name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings.

    05:03-05:22

Indeed, I have already cursed them because you do not lay it to heart." You see, it was the priest's job to bless people, and God says, "I'm about to make your job completely irrelevant, because the blessings that you're giving, I'm going to turn them into curses." Look at verse 3.

    05:24-05:42

God says, "Behold, I will rebuke your offspring, and spread dung on your faces." "The dung of your offerings and you shall be taken away with it." How many of you have heard a sermon before on Malachi 2.3?

    05:43-05:45

    Not very often, right?

    05:45-05:48

So, honestly, this is why we do expository preaching.

    05:48-05:51

We go through verse by verse because normally I wouldn't...

    05:52-05:55

pardon the expression, I wouldn't touch this with a ten-foot pole.

    05:55-06:08

But there it is in God's Word and you're like, It looks like what God's saying is, it looks like what He's saying is, He's going to spread dung on the faces of the priests.

    06:10-06:12

    That's exactly what it's saying.

    06:13-06:21

You see, in Exodus 29:14, there was a procedure when you offered a sacrifice.

    06:21-06:31

And part of the procedure was, when you killed the animal, you were to take the - were a dung, insert whatever word you're most comfortable with there.

    06:32-06:41

So when you offered the sacrifice and you took the entrails out, you were to take the dung of the animals outside.

    06:43-07:00

So understand that this wasn't just God treating Israel like a puppy that was supposed to be housebroken, but had a mess in the house, like, "I'm going to rub your nose in it." It's a picture of those Old Testament sacrifices is to say you're unclean and you're acting filthy, and you don't deserve to be in the sanctuary.

    07:00-07:05

In fact, you deserve, like the crap, to be taken outside.

    07:08-07:09

Right? Is that what it says?

    07:11-07:14

Unfortunately, that's probably the only thing some people are going to remember from this sermon.

    07:16-07:17

    It's a gross thought.

    07:20-07:21

But what is this telling us about God?

    07:23-07:25

He is pretty fired up right now, isn't he?

    07:26-07:33

He's like, "You're making a mockery of what is supposed to be worship." Look at verses 4-8.

    07:35-07:42

"So shall you know that I have sent this command to you, that My covenant with Levi may stand, says the Lord of hosts.

    07:42-07:47

My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him.

    07:48-07:50

It was a covenant of fear, and he feared Me.

    07:50-07:52

He stood in awe of My name.

    07:52-07:56

"If true instruction was in his mouth, then no wrong was found on his lips.

    07:56-08:01

He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.

    08:03-08:15

For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is a messenger of the Lord of hosts." Now, when he's talking about Levi, he's not just talking about one person.

    08:15-08:17

I think it's pretty obvious from the context.

    08:17-08:21

He's talking about the priesthood as a whole back in the early days.

    08:21-08:23

came from the tribe of Levi.

    08:23-08:32

So he's sort of personifying the whole priesthood by identifying them with the man that they came from.

    08:33-08:37

God's basically saying here, "This was the old school mentality of the priests.

    08:37-08:39

    This was the right mentality.

    08:39-08:48

This is how they were back in the beginning." Look at verse 8, "But you have turned aside from the way.

    08:48-08:51

You have caused many to stumble by your instruction.

    08:51-08:54

"You have corrupted the covenant of Levi," says the Lord of hosts.

    08:56-08:57

    Pause there.

    08:59-09:00

There's just a whole comparison here.

    09:02-09:04

You see, God says, "Levi was reverent," verse 5.

    09:05-09:07

"Levi walked with God," verse 6.

    09:07-09:10

And "Levi turned people from sin," verse 6.

    09:10-09:14

Malachi, the priests in your day are all the opposite.

    09:15-09:18

"Instead of revering Me, they've corrupted the covenant," verse 8.

    09:18-09:22

Instead of walking with God, they have turned aside, verse 8.

    09:23-09:31

And instead of turning people from sin, they turn people to stumble, causing many people to stumble, again, verse 8.

    09:32-09:32

    So you see the problem.

    09:32-09:53

God's like, "Priests, you are way, way, way, way off track." Verse 9, "And so I make you despised and abased before all the people, and as much as you do not keep My ways, but show partiality in your instruction." God says, "This is why people don't respect you, priests." God's like, "I'm causing that. Do you know why people don't respect you?

    09:53-09:57

Do you know why people don't look up to you?" You're making a mockery of it.

    09:59-10:04

So at this point, you're like, "Yeah, we got it. We got it. We got it." Getting back on track means getting back to real worship.

    10:04-10:05

    Anything else?

    10:05-10:06

    But here's the message today.

    10:07-10:15

If you are married, I'm going to give you a statement that you have to take to heart.

    10:16-10:20

This statement summarizes the entire rest of this passage.

    10:21-10:23

The statement is this, it's on your outline.

    10:24-10:42

"Faithless in marriage is faithless to God." If you are married, "Faithless in marriage is faithless to God." You're like, "Well, what do you mean by that?" Here's what I mean.

    10:42-10:52

If you are married and you are being faithless in your marriage, God equates that to being faithless to Him Himself.

    10:55-10:57

Why is it phrased this way?

    10:59-11:02

Why use the word "faithless"? Because this is the word God uses.

    11:02-11:15

We're going to go through this passage, and you're going to see five times in this passage, God uses this word "faithless." Now, your job is to circle the word "faithless" every time you see it.

    11:15-11:34

Some translations say "dealt treacherously." The Hebrew word is "begot," which means "to act deceitfully" or "to betray." It carries the idea - and this is so important - this Hebrew word carries the idea of being a traitor.

    11:36-11:54

So when we talk about being faithless, we're not talking about, "Yeah, he's just not quite the husband that he should be. I mean, he's okay, but..." Or, "She's just kind of half-committed to the marriage, and overall I think it's decent." And being faithless, God doesn't view it as a little thing.

    11:54-12:06

God views it as, "You're a traitor." Somebody trusts you, and you stab them in the back, deceitfully and intentionally.

    12:07-12:08

That's what the word faithless means.

    12:09-12:16

God says you're being faithless in your marriage, and I take that personally.

    12:16-12:17

I take that as being faithless to me.

    12:19-12:21

You're going to see it in the passage again five times.

    12:22-12:23

See if you can find them all, all right?

    12:24-12:26

It's like church version of Pokemon.

    12:28-12:33

Find somebody that's laughing and have them explain that reference to you if you don't get it.

    12:34-12:37

So for sure, to get back on track, you're going to get vertical, for sure.

    12:39-12:51

But, listen church, one of the clearest, most often ignored, consistent teachings in the Bible is this.

    12:52-13:07

God says if you are off track in your horizontal relationships, that's the person-to-person relationships, if you're off track in your horizontal relationships, you are off track in your vertical relationship.

    13:08-13:18

In other words, God says if you are serious about this, the vertical relationship, then you have to be serious about this.

    13:19-13:20

    Here's how Jesus said it.

    13:21-13:36

Matthew 5, verse 23, Jesus said, "So if you are offering your gift at the altar," worshipping, "and there remember that your brother has something against you, Leave your gift there before the altar and go.

    13:36-13:49

First be reconciled to your brother and then come and offer your gift." Jesus said you can be going to worship if you realize, you know what, things aren't right between Me and a friend of Mine, a family member. Things aren't right.

    13:50-13:53

Jesus said you need to go fix that before you worship.

    13:54-13:58

See, this horizontal stuff matters greatly to God.

    13:58-14:31

And no horizontal relationship is more important one with your spouse. So here's the point today, you're going to see it very clearly in the text. If you're not on track, married people, listen, it'd be easy for somebody to tune out right now and say, "Well, I'm not married." You plan on getting married someday? Then you really need to listen to this. Do you know people who are married? Are you praying for a marriage right now? You need to You listen to this.

    14:32-14:37

But especially if you are married right now, seriously tune in.

    14:38-14:43

Because if you are not on track in your marriage, you are not on track with God.

    14:45-14:51

To get back on track with God, you better get back on track in your marriage.

    14:53-14:54

You see, you could be sitting here saying, "You know what?

    14:55-14:57

To be honest with you, things are terrible at home.

    15:01-15:23

ministry's rocking!" God is not impressed. He's not. Like, you know, my wife and I just don't get along. Haven't gotten along in years, but I'll tell you, you know, you know something that's good in my life though is I spend, I spend 80 hours a week down at the soup kitchen. God doesn't care. Why? Because if you're not You're not on track in your marriage.

    15:25-15:31

God says you're off track in your relationship with Him.

    15:33-15:35

Look at what Paul told Timothy.

    15:37-15:45

1 Timothy 3 - this pertains in particular to elders, leaders in the church, but you're going to see a principle here that really applies to everyone.

    15:46-15:51

It says, "He must manage his own household well with all dignity, keeping his children submissive.

    15:52-15:53

    But look at this.

    15:53-16:02

"For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church?" Okay, pop quiz. This is real easy. You've got two choices.

    16:03-16:05

According to God, which one takes first priority?

    16:06-16:08

Your work in the church or your work in the home?

    16:08-16:09

    Shout it out.

    16:10-16:11

Home, right? Do you see that?

    16:12-16:50

You see, you would think, "Well, he's a good leader in the church, so that means he's probably a good leader in the home." what that says? No. It says you have to have it figured out at home in order to even qualify to be able to be a leader in the church. Again 1st Timothy 5 8, "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, especially for members of his own household..." Look at this phrase. This is as serious as the dung in the face He has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

    16:52-16:53

    Do you see that?

    16:54-17:01

God says if you don't take care of your own house, now do you think spouse is included in this?

    17:02-17:05

I would say especially if you're not taking care of your spouse.

    17:06-17:44

Men, if you are not taking care of your house, not taking care of your wives, God says, "You have denied the faith." And God says, look at this phrase, "You are worse than an unbeliever." God's like, "There's the people that know Me and love Me, and there's the people that don't know Me at all, don't love Me." God's like, "And then there's you, somewhere down here." So in Malachi, getting back on track with God means getting back on track in your marriage.

    17:44-17:46

Faithless in marriage is faithless to God.

    17:46-17:53

And somebody right now is like, "Hey, I'm really not convinced that that's a true statement." Well, I'm going to show you why this is a true statement.

    17:54-17:55

    Three things on your outline.

    17:56-17:56

    Why is this true?

    17:56-18:00

Number one, because you made a covenant before God.

    18:01-18:03

Look at verses 10 through 12.

    18:05-18:07

Remember, we're looking for... what's the word we're looking for?

    18:09-18:10

Faithless. And what does that word mean?

    18:11-18:16

    Traitor. Traitor! Backstabber! Deceitful!

    18:17-18:19

Okay? See if you can find it.

    18:19-18:20

    Verses 10 through 12.

    18:21-18:25

"Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?

    18:25-18:31

Why then are we faithless to one another, profaning the covenant of our fathers?

    18:32-18:34

    Judah has been faithless.

    18:36-18:39

An abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem.

    18:40-18:49

For Judah has profaned the sanctuary of the Lord, which he loves, and has married the daughter of a foreign god.

    18:50-18:59

May the Lord cut off from the tents of Jacob any descendants of the man who does this, who brings an offering to the Lord of hosts.

    19:00-19:01

    See the first problem here.

    19:03-19:10

The reason faithless in marriage is faithless to God, number one, is because you made a covenant before God in your marriage.

    19:11-19:13

Here's the issue here, you're going to see it in the rest of the passage.

    19:14-19:17

But this is the particular issue that we're addressing.

    19:17-19:28

Israel was guilty of breaking the covenant with their wives, divorcing them, and marrying these pagan foreign women.

    19:28-19:30

Do you see why this is a doubly bad thing?

    19:32-19:54

See, Israel returning from exile, and these men who were married, these Jewish men were checking out these gorgeous, exotic foreign women, Thinking I'd like to have her Yeah, yeah, but what about your what about your wife?

    19:56-21:08

Like all the thing with her stale we just haven't been getting along since the exile. I mean, it's just been a Just haven't been getting along But dude this woman that you're checking out she's a pagan she worships like statues So she's hot and they were divorcing their wives And they were marrying pagan women Remember last week. I told you that Malachi was a contemporary of Nehemiah and I have to share this Nehemiah 1325 is one of my favorite verses in the Old Testament Because Nehemiah was dealing with the same thing Jewish men abandoning their wives marrying these foreign Pagan women be my 1325. We're gonna turn there, but I want you to write that down. Nehemiah says that he now imagine as he Confronted them cursed them beat them pulled out their hair and made them take an oath You're like why is that your favorite because it just makes me wish that I was an Old Testament preacher I Do I wish that I lived in Old Testament times. Could you imagine?

    21:09-21:31

Somebody shows up to church, and we're like, "Joe, heard you haven't been faithful to your wife this week." And then I'd be like, "Darren, why don't you take Joe here out to the parking lot and show him how we feel about that?" And then Joe comes in missing a few teeth, bruised, his clothes all torn up.

    21:31-21:39

He comes limping back in like, "What happened to you?" He's like, "You were loved." But that's how serious this was.

    21:40-21:49

Nehemiah was like, "I had to stomp a mud hole in some people." Now understand, when we talk about these marriages, we're not talking about interracial marriage, okay?

    21:49-21:51

There's only one race. There's a human race.

    21:52-21:52

    That's not the issue.

    21:53-22:01

The issue is interfaith marriage, which 2 Corinthians 6, the Apostle Paul gives a huge warning.

    22:03-22:07

You should not consider marriage with someone who doesn't love Jesus Christ.

    22:09-22:11

A believer should not marry an unbeliever.

    22:12-22:18

This passage is not condemning everyone who is divorced.

    22:19-22:25

The Bible certainly makes allowances for that in special circumstances, but it's never commanded.

    22:27-22:29

But here's what we are condemning.

    22:30-22:45

People who are abandoning their promise, "in the name of love," or more accurately, I put down in my notes, "in the name of lust." Does that still happen today?

    22:47-22:49

I mean, I don't know. You tell me, does that still happen today?

    22:49-23:01

The people abandon their marriage because somebody else catches their eye, and now all of a sudden, their mindset is, "I'm going to trade in the old model for the new model," which is disgusting mentality.

    23:02-23:03

    Does that happen today?

    23:04-23:12

See, this is what Malachi was condemning, and that's what Nehemiah was beating people up over, and this is what we're condemning today, if you're married.

    23:14-23:20

Let me ask you this, whatever happened to just, I don't know, keeping your word?

    23:22-23:25

Sounds so foreign, doesn't it? Keeping your word.

    23:26-23:27

I mean, we kind of grew up with that, didn't we, Darren?

    23:27-23:32

But the next generation it seems like you need to keep your word like what's that supposed to be?

    23:34-24:02

We live in a day It just it just sounds so weird it's it's so foreign to our way of thinking You know the commercial on TV that drives me insane You know the commercial that drives me So I'm gonna tell you the commercial absolutely drives me insane the commercials that are directed at people who are buried in credit card debt Have you seen these commercials where they say call us and get those nasty credit card companies off your back?

    24:02-24:40

How many people have seen those commercials just call us and we'll get those nasty credit card companies off of your back And I was thinking about that, you know Those credit card companies weren't so nasty When they allowed me to obtain something that I didn't have the money to pay for they weren't so nasty then How many people here have used a credit card before When you use a credit card, and I've used one Alex, I'm sorry but when you use a credit card your that piece of paper comes out and and Then you sign the you signed a little slip right you know what that thing is that you're signing What's that thing that you're signing?

    24:41-25:42

Basically what you're saying is I promise to pay this back You're saying I'm agreeing to the terms of the cardholder But it's just basically saying yeah I don't have the money for this now But the credit company is gonna cover me and I promise I promise I'm gonna pay this back I'm good for it Now all of a sudden when I've buried myself in debt Now the credit card company they're the nasty people And we need somebody to help get those nasty credit card companies off of our back because we made the irresponsible choices You see when we sign that piece of paper at Kmart or whatever fine store you shop at. When we signed that paper, we meant it when we signed it, didn't we? Now down the road, we didn't even remember what it was that we bought. We're sort of like, "I really don't want to keep my word anymore.

    25:44-25:50

I need somebody to help get me out from under these nasty credit card companies." And yeah, that's the same thing that happens in our marriages.

    25:51-25:54

Honestly, we meant it at the time.

    25:55-25:59

In sickness and in health, till death do we part, forsaking all others.

    26:00-26:10

We meant it at the time, and believe me, I have done so many weddings and I've seen, you know, the bride and the groom and the look in their eyes when they're like, "I'm promising myself to you forever." Yeah, they mean it.

    26:10-26:11

    They mean it.

    26:13-26:18

Like the credit card, it's like, "Well, I meant it at the time, but I really don't want to keep my word anymore." And do you know what God calls that?

    26:20-26:21

    He calls that being faithless.

    26:22-26:23

He calls that being a traitor.

    26:25-26:36

And if you're sitting here today and you're like, "You know, I really do, deep down, I really do want to be faithful to God." Well, do you think that you can be faithful to God without being faithful to the covenant that you made before God?

    26:38-26:41

    Faithless in marriage is what?

    26:43-26:44

    Faithless to God.

    26:45-26:49

Number two, because you are being joined together by God.

    26:50-26:52

    Look at verses 13-15.

    26:53-27:04

And this second thing you do, you cover the Lord's altar with tears and weeping and groaning because He no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand.

    27:05-27:13

But you say, "Why does He not?" Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless.

    27:16-27:25

Though she is your companion and your wife by covenant, did He not make them one with a portion of the Spirit in their union?

    27:27-27:30

Number two, because you are being joined together by God.

    27:31-27:35

You see that, the tears, "Why doesn't God accept my worship?" What's the answer?

    27:36-27:38

Because you've been faithless to your wife, that's why.

    27:39-27:44

That gets back to the whole, let's not talk about the vertical thing if you have no interest in the horizontal thing.

    27:44-27:45

    That's what's going on here.

    27:46-27:48

Marriage is not a business partnership.

    27:49-27:54

Marriage is not a buddy to hang out with or someone to keep you awake on road trips.

    27:55-27:56

    Look at verse 15 again.

    27:58-28:01

Did he not make them one?

    28:03-28:07

The husband and wife are two becoming one.

    28:08-28:09

    They belong to each other.

    28:09-28:13

And that's why it says, with a portion of the spirit in their union.

    28:14-28:17

It means they not only belong to each other, they belong to God.

    28:18-28:22

The verse means, you know, the marriage is more than paperwork.

    28:24-28:27

It's more than just an agreement between two people.

    28:29-28:31

    Marriage is a God thing.

    28:31-28:33

    It's a spiritual thing.

    28:33-28:40

It's literally two people becoming one person, which is a reality and a process at the same time.

    28:41-28:45

It's a reality and a process at the same time, this two becoming one.

    28:45-28:48

Like, well, how can something be a reality and a process?

    28:48-28:49

    Think about it this way.

    28:52-28:58

If I decided tomorrow that I was going to sign up for the army, enlist, we're pretending, right?

    28:58-29:05

If I enlisted for the army, when I signed my enlistment papers, You could say, "Well, you're a soldier now, right?

    29:06-29:14

You're GI, you're a soldier." I'm like, "Great." They're like, "Now you have to go to bootcamp." And I'm like, "Why do I have to go to bootcamp?

    29:14-29:15

You just said I was a soldier.

    29:16-29:17

So why do I go to bootcamp?

    29:18-29:19

Because they're going to make me a soldier, right?

    29:20-29:26

So do you see how I am something and they're making me something at the same time?" It's like that with holiness.

    29:26-29:29

In Jesus Christ, God pronounces you holy.

    29:30-29:33

So what is the whole process of sanctification in the Christian life?

    29:34-29:36

It's God making you what he's already pronounced you to be.

    29:37-29:38

You see, marriage is like that too.

    29:38-29:39

    God says you're one.

    29:39-29:40

    You two are now one.

    29:41-29:46

And your married lives together is the process of the two becoming one.

    29:48-30:04

That's why Genesis 2.24 says, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother "and shall cleave or hold fast to his wife, "and the two shall become one flesh." And this reality is found in no other relationship you have on the earth.

    30:04-30:06

That's why this is so important to God.

    30:07-30:11

You are not one with your parents.

    30:12-30:14

You are not one with your friends.

    30:14-30:17

You are not one with your kids and you're not one with your dog.

    30:18-30:28

The only relationship that the Bible says results in two people becoming one person is the relationship with your spouse.

    30:30-30:36

That's why Jesus said in Matthew 19, 6, "So they are no longer two, but one flesh.

    30:37-30:42

But therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." Your marriage is a God project.

    30:44-30:52

So if you're sitting here today and you're saying, "God, I just want you to do something in my life." The question is, are you being faithless towards your spouse?

    30:54-31:00

Then God's response is, "You know, I am trying to do something in your life right now, and you're working against the very thing that I'm trying to do.

    31:03-31:06

Because faithless in marriage is faithless to God.

    31:07-31:07

    You made a covenant.

    31:09-31:15

You're being joined together by God, and finally for today, because you have a purpose for God.

    31:16-31:19

Look at the rest of verse 15 and then 16.

    31:21-31:22

And what was the one God seeking?

    31:25-31:26

    Godly offspring.

    31:28-31:32

So guard yourselves in your spirit and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth.

    31:33-31:43

For the man who does not love his wife but divorces her, says the Lord, the God of Israel, covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts.

    31:44-31:55

So guard yourselves in your spirit and do not be faithless." You made a covenant before God, you're being joined together by God, and you have a purpose for God.

    31:55-31:59

God does want to do something in your marriage, but He also wants to do something through your marriage.

    32:00-32:07

And as important as marriage itself is, do you realize God's design is about much more than even your marriage?

    32:09-32:10

    What's God after?

    32:11-32:13

Verse 15, what's God after? Shout it out.

    32:15-32:17

    Godly offspring, right?

    32:18-32:23

Now we're not saying that a married couple without kids is on a lesser plan.

    32:23-32:24

    We're not saying that.

    32:25-32:27

I'm like, "Well, then what are you saying?" Here's what I'm saying.

    32:28-32:30

Let's pretend for a second that you're God.

    32:31-32:31

    Okay?

    32:32-32:34

We're just pretending for a second that you're God.

    32:35-32:44

And you're looking down on this earth you created, and the people that you created, and you want to make sure that every generation knows about your love.

    32:44-32:56

You want to make sure that every generation knows that you are a merciful and gracious God, that while you hate sin, you are quick to pardon, and you love to restore lost and broken people.

    32:56-32:58

You want every generation to know that.

    32:59-33:00

How would you make that happen?

    33:02-33:13

Every child that's born, you would want that child to be in a stable home with loving parents, parents who are committed to God and who are committed to each other.

    33:13-33:14

Does that sound like a good plan?

    33:15-33:16

    That would work, wouldn't it?

    33:17-33:18

    That's what God's after.

    33:19-33:22

We pretended that we were God for a second, and now let's pretend you're the devil.

    33:23-33:27

If you were the devil, how would you disrupt God's plan?

    33:28-33:45

Divorce, affairs, abandonment, bitterness in the home towards one another, and have those kids, have these kids grow up confused and hurt and angry.

    33:47-33:48

You think that would disrupt the plan?

    33:51-33:56

So husbands, husbands here today, I'm speaking specifically to fathers.

    33:57-34:03

The best thing that you can do for your children is to love your wife.

    34:05-34:06

That's the best thing you can do for your kids.

    34:07-34:11

Wives, moms, do you wanna be a good mom?

    34:12-34:13

Do you wanna be a good mom?

    34:13-34:18

You know the best thing you can do for your kids, the best way you can be a mother is to love your husband.

    34:20-34:22

You saw it twice, verses 15 and 16.

    34:23-34:24

    God says it twice.

    34:24-34:25

    He says, "Guard yourself.

    34:26-34:29

Do not be faithless." Guard yourself.

    34:31-34:35

Stop thinking negatively towards your spouse.

    34:36-34:39

Stop speaking negatively towards your spouse.

    34:40-34:43

Stop considering how to get out of the marriage.

    34:43-34:45

    Stop entertaining an affair.

    34:47-34:48

    Love is a choice.

    34:50-35:01

And you need to make the choice to love, because faithless in marriage is faithless to God.

    35:02-35:03

    You made a covenant.

    35:05-35:09

God's joining you together, and God wants to do some things through you.

    35:10-35:11

    Let's pray.

    35:12-35:28

Father in heaven, I'm sure there are people here that are looking to get back on track walk with you but their marriages are miserable. They haven't been on the same page, they've been fighting, they've been distant, they've been avoiding each other.

    35:29-36:14

God I pray, I pray that today is the day of repentance for some homes where this has been happening. I'm sure there are some men in this room right now that are entertaining flirtatious relationships that have no business doing. They find themselves just like these Israelites abandoning their commitment that they made abandoning the the oneness that you are trying to form abandoning the purpose of raising godly children because someone else has caught their attention I pray today's the day of repentance God God we we live in a day that I guess I'd be arrested if I did what Nehemiah did.

    36:16-36:39

But I pray that Your Holy Spirit would grab every heart in this room, every married couple, everyone in here that's about to get married, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would grab them and shake them to this reality, that if they're being faithless in their marriage, You consider that being faithless towards you yourself.

    36:41-36:43

So God, I pray that there's much restoration that happens.

    36:45-36:58

I pray that tomorrow is a brand new day, because some hard conversations happen today, some apologies and seeking forgiveness and much prayer happens today.

    37:00-37:04

Get us back to a marriage commitment that glorifies Your name.

    37:06-37:11

We pray these things, Father, in the glorious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

  • 00:48-00:52

Well, I am so excited to be back speaking.

    00:54-01:04

And somebody right now just thought, "Oh, you were gone?" Well, being a preacher, I talk to other preachers and hear stories about what happens with other preachers.

    01:05-01:13

And I heard this story about this couple that had come to this pastor for marriage counseling.

    01:15-01:34

I could sort of relate to the story because the pastor had said that when the couple would come in, it was obvious from the posture, the wife was sitting listening to what the pastor had to say, and she had her Bible with her, and she's like, "I need help. We need help." And she was really just tuned in.

    01:36-01:37

I've seen this so many times.

    01:37-01:44

But the husband was just kind of slouched down in his chair, not really paying attention the whole time.

    01:44-01:47

The pastor's trying to share this with what the Bible says.

    01:47-01:49

Here's what God's called you to be as a husband.

    01:49-01:51

And here's what God's called you to be as a wife.

    01:51-01:54

And the pastor's talking, and the guy's just sitting there with his head down.

    01:55-01:59

But the pastor's like, he is totally just not even listening to me at all.

    02:00-02:03

And he's thinking to himself, what am I going to do to get this guy's attention?

    02:05-02:17

So the pastor just has this moment of just craziness where he gets up and walks around the table, He takes the young lady by the hand and he stands her up.

    02:20-02:25

And he puts his hand on the back of the lady's head and dips her over and kisses her.

    02:27-02:37

And puts her back in the seat and she's just like, "Whew!" The pastor turns to her husband and he said, "That's what she needs!

    02:38-03:00

At least twice a week!" and her husband goes, "I can bring her in here on Tuesday and Thursday if that works for you." The truth is where there's a relationship, there's going to be times of feeling close, and there's going to be times of feeling distant, right?

    03:01-03:06

And if you are a Christian, this can happen in your relationship with God.

    03:08-03:11

That there are times in your walk with the Lord You feel very close, right?

    03:11-03:16

And there are times in your walk with the Lord that you feel very distant, and you feel very detached.

    03:17-03:25

And if that's how you're feeling today, if you're sitting here today and you say, "Pastor Jeff, I feel detached." God didn't move.

    03:27-03:27

    You did.

    03:28-03:31

When I feel distant from the Lord, that's on me.

    03:33-03:39

And there's some people here that once upon a time had a growing You were on an exciting walk with Jesus Christ.

    03:41-03:49

Love to pray, you love to read the Bible, you were excited to witness, you were excited to worship, and there was a time that you just saw God at work in your life.

    03:51-04:08

And it was so vibrant and so exciting, and right now you're saying, "Yeah, you know, not so much." You might be saying, "You know, I need to get back on track." How do we get there? How do we get off track?

    04:10-04:12

Well, for some people, it's trials.

    04:14-04:20

I'm not going to ask you to raise your hand, but for some people right here, you've gone through a trial in your life that has discouraged you.

    04:22-04:24

    And you've lost heart.

    04:25-04:27

I don't really feel like it.

    04:29-04:34

You know, this trial's been going on so long, I'm just discouraged.

    04:37-04:38

For some people, maybe it's not a trial.

    04:38-04:40

    Maybe you're just too busy.

    04:42-04:52

That somehow Jesus Christ and your walk with Him and the priority of being a disciple of Christ has sort of dropped down on your priority list.

    04:53-04:55

For some here, maybe it's sin.

    04:57-05:11

I'm like, you know what, I know what I need to do, but I've been involved in sin, and that has really just severely hindered my walk with the Lord, as it does and as it always will.

    05:13-05:14

We want to get back on track.

    05:17-05:24

And even hearing this now, I know there are some people right now you're hearing this, "I want to get back on track with God." You're hearing this and you're like, "You know what, Pastor Jeff, I would love that!

    05:26-05:27

You don't know how to do that.

    05:29-05:31

Well, I have some good news for you.

    05:32-05:37

God's Word tells us exactly how to do that.

    05:39-05:47

So, if right now you're feeling like, "You're right, I need to get back on track." You cannot miss any part of this series.

    05:49-05:51

I want you to turn your Bibles to the book of Malachi.

    05:52-05:54

It's the last book of the Old Testament.

    05:54-05:58

It's actually the last word from God in the Old Testament.

    05:59-06:03

It was written about 430 B.C.

    06:04-06:11

And if you're trying to put this in a timeline on your mind, Malachi would have been a contemporary of Nehemiah.

    06:12-06:14

And what was happening in Israel at the time?

    06:14-06:17

Well, Israel was returning to their land from exile.

    06:18-06:29

Remember, God disciplined Israel for persistent sin by sending the Assyrians and the Babylonians to conquer and scatter the people.

    06:30-06:44

And under the Persian rule, the Lord allowed the Israelites to come back into their land to rebuild and to restore, specifically the city of Jerusalem and particularly the temple.

    06:46-06:51

And when Israel got back into the land, as you could imagine, they were so zealous for the Lord.

    06:52-06:57

And we're like, "The Lord restored us!" And we thought we were done as a people and the Lord restored us!

    06:57-06:59

And let's build the walls in Jerusalem!

    07:00-07:01

    And let's build the temple!

    07:01-07:02

And they were so fired up!

    07:03-07:05

    So excited! So zealous!

    07:07-07:21

Can you believe just 90 years later when Malachi was giving this message, Israel was worse than before they went into exile.

    07:23-07:25

    Back to their old ways.

    07:26-07:30

And that's why we're turning to the book of Malachi because this is what the book of Malachi is about.

    07:30-07:32

Malachi is about God saying, "Hey, hey, hey!

    07:33-07:34

    Get back on track!

    07:35-07:58

You see, you were so zealous and then you just kind of veered off and God's like, "No, no, no, we're going to get back on track." And they're like, "Well, how in the world are we going to get back on track?" And God says, "Here are some areas that you need to focus on to get back on track." So if there's anyone here right now that needs to get back on track, here's where it starts on your outline.

    07:59-08:00

    It starts with real worship.

    08:01-08:03

So the message today is how to get back to real worship.

    08:03-08:06

    It has to start here.

    08:08-08:08

    What is worship?

    08:10-08:16

Worship defined is showing reverence and adoration.

    08:16-08:16

    That's worship.

    08:18-08:22

You know, worship is actually an abbreviated word.

    08:23-08:39

It really comes from "worth-ship." They just sort of shortened that, made it easier to say, which I'm glad, because when we sing "Here I am to worship," it'd get real awkward, you know, "Here I am to worth-ship." Sound like Sylvester the Cat.

    08:41-08:47

But that's worship, it's worth-ship, it's ascribing worth to God.

    08:49-08:56

Now when we talk about music, I know there's so many people here probably right now that are thinking, "Oh, I know what worship is.

    08:57-08:59

That's the singing part of church.

    09:00-09:09

Worship is just the music." Well, music is part of worship.

    09:12-09:15

But worship is so much more than just music.

    09:15-09:27

You see, it would be like if I brought in the wheel of a car today and held it up, and I said, "This is a car." And you would say, "No, that is not a car.

    09:27-09:30

That is a very important part of the car." Right, Ben?

    09:31-09:36

That is a very important part of the car, but that is not the car.

    09:37-09:38

That's what some people do with music.

    09:39-09:40

This is worship. No, no, no, no.

    09:41-09:45

Music is an important part, but music is not the totality of worship.

    09:47-09:48

    Okay?

    09:48-10:00

So, in the Old Testament, worship centered primarily around offering sacrifices in the temple, and we're going to see that here in Malachi.

    10:01-10:12

But if you're thinking, "Pastor Jeff, I've read the Bible, I know a little theology, and I know that Jesus Christ offered the final sacrifice, and we don't offer sacrifices anymore.

    10:14-10:27

So, for us to be talking about Malachi and talking about sacrifices, we're sort of detached from that, because the truth, Pastor Jeff, is we don't offer sacrifices anymore." And I want to tell you that's not true.

    10:28-10:32

We absolutely do still offer sacrifices.

    10:35-10:36

    Look at Romans 12.

    10:39-10:47

Romans 12.1 says, and this is New Testament, "Present your bodies as a..." What's that say?

    10:48-10:54

"A living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your..." What's the next two words?

    10:55-10:56

    Spiritual worship.

    10:57-10:58

    What is your spiritual worship?

    10:58-11:00

By offering yourself as a sacrifice.

    11:01-11:09

When that animal was killed on the altar, dead, wholly committed to God, God says, "That's you. You're the sacrifice, but you get down off the altar and you live.

    11:10-11:18

But every step you take is as a living sacrifice." So the question is, do we still offer sacrifice today? Yes or no?

    11:19-11:21

Yes. And guess where the sacrifice is?

    11:21-11:24

It's you. You are the sacrifice.

    11:26-11:29

Another example, Hebrews 13, verses 15-16.

    11:29-11:31

We still offer sacrifices. Look at this.

    11:32-11:38

The Hebrew writer says, "Through Him, through Jesus, then let us continually offer up a sacrifice." There it is again.

    11:40-11:44

"A sacrifice of praise to God, that is the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name.

    11:46-11:52

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have for such..." Is that a word?

    11:54-11:56

    Sacrifices are pleasing to God.

    11:56-11:59

So the question is, do we still sacrifice under the new covenant?

    12:01-12:02

    Yeah, we do.

    12:02-12:04

    And here are the sacrifices.

    12:05-12:07

    Sacrifice of praise.

    12:07-12:09

Yeah, that music, part of that.

    12:09-12:11

Also, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name.

    12:11-12:15

Every time you witness for Christ, you're offering a sacrifice to God.

    12:16-12:23

Every time you give testimony on how awesome God has been to you, You are giving God a sacrifice.

    12:24-12:31

Every time it says to do good, every time you do good in the name of Jesus, you are offering a sacrifice to God.

    12:31-12:38

Every time you share what you have, you are offering a sacrifice to God.

    12:39-12:42

Now this is not a sacrifice to have your sin forgiven.

    12:42-12:48

Don't think, "Well, I have to worship and I have to do good, and then God will forgive my sin." No, no, no.

    12:50-13:00

offered himself as a once-and-for-all sacrifice for sin. There are no more sacrifices to be made for sin. This is talking about a sacrifice of praise, okay?

    13:01-13:42

It's a sacrifice of praise, not a sacrifice for sin. Everybody with me on that? So how do I get back on track with worship? We're gonna go to the text for your outline. I'm gonna make it real easy. Here is how you get back on track with we're going to breathe. Oh, Pastor Jeff got new age while he was gone. Breathe. Go ahead, breathe. In. Out. What are we breathing? Number one, jot this down.

    13:43-13:47

Here's how you get back on track with worship. You have to breathe in the love I love God.

    13:48-13:49

    I'm not making this up.

    13:49-13:50

I want you to look at the text with me.

    13:52-13:55

The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.

    13:55-13:59

"I have loved you," says the Lord.

    14:00-14:07

But you say, "How have you loved us?" "Is not Esau Jacob's brother?" declares the Lord.

    14:07-14:09

"Yet I have loved Jacob, but Esau I have hated.

    14:11-14:19

I have laid waste his hill country left his heritage to jackals of the deserts.

    14:19-14:36

If Edom says, "We are shattered, but we will rebuild the ruins," the Lord of Hosts says, "They may build, but I will tear down, and they will be called the wicked country, and the people with whom the Lord is angry forever.

    14:37-14:45

Your own eyes shall see this, and you shall say, Great is the Lord beyond the border of Israel.

    14:47-14:49

Now what's this talk about Jacob and Esau?

    14:50-14:54

Now understand here, Malachi, he's not talking about individuals.

    14:55-14:56

    He's talking about people groups.

    14:57-14:58

    How do you know that?

    14:58-15:00

Well, look at verse 4 again with me.

    15:00-15:04

God says, "If Edom says..." Wait, wait, wait. Who's Edom?

    15:05-15:08

Those were the descendants of Esau.

    15:08-15:14

You see, Jacob represented Israel, and Esau represented the Edomites.

    15:14-15:23

And this language is used in the Bible that Jacob representing Israel, Esau representing Edom, or people that ended up becoming severe enemies of God.

    15:24-15:26

It's used other places in the Bible.

    15:26-15:29

Obadiah - that little teeny tiny book in the Old Testament?

    15:30-15:31

    Same thing.

    15:31-15:33

And Romans 9 - same thing.

    15:35-15:36

    What's the point?

    15:37-15:43

The point - God is starting this whole prophecy, This whole "get back on track," this whole message from Malachi.

    15:44-16:01

Here's God's point. God says, "Listen, I chose you, and I have loved you." Israel doubted God's love because they weren't as prosperous as they thought they should be.

    16:02-16:04

Does that sound familiar to anyone else?

    16:06-16:09

doubt God's love because He's not cashing in the way that we think He should.

    16:11-16:12

Anybody else, has that been your experience?

    16:13-16:14

I think we've all been there if we're honest.

    16:15-16:16

    Does God really love me?

    16:17-16:18

    Why is this happening?

    16:19-16:20

    Why is God allowing this?

    16:20-16:22

If God really loved me, He'd do something about this.

    16:23-16:29

And Israel was at a place in their history that they're starting to doubt a little bit.

    16:31-16:37

So when God calls them back on track, It's not about legalism.

    16:38-16:45

God's not saying, "Israel, you're just not jumping through the right hoops for Me." It's not about religion.

    16:47-16:47

    It's not about religion.

    16:48-16:59

It's not God saying, "Okay, Israel, here's your checklist of rules you have to keep in order to make Me happy." Do you see right off the bat - this is Old Testament - but do you see right off the bat God says this is about a love relationship.

    17:00-17:01

    I love you.

    17:04-17:15

The only way anyone is motivated to really worship God is to know God's love.

    17:17-17:21

I can't motivate you to worship by trying to make you feel guilty.

    17:22-17:30

You know, Ryan, shame on you as a leader in the church, and I didn't see you really belting it out during worship time. Shame on you.

    17:30-17:34

that's not going to motivate... I wasn't watching Ryan during worship, okay?

    17:35-17:58

That's not going to motivate you to worship, is it? No. I can't motivate you to worship through obligation. Like, "Come on, Kerry, you know what the Bible says about worship, so why aren't you doing it?" "Well, you're right, Pastor Jeff, I should, so I guess I'll worship." That's not the motivator. What is the motivator to To worship!

    18:01-18:04

    Breathing in God's love.

    18:05-18:06

    That's the motivator.

    18:08-18:08

    And only that.

    18:11-18:24

When I came to Christ, back in 1995, it was a period of my life where I was involved in a lot of sin.

    18:25-18:26

    A lot of sin.

    18:26-18:31

to list them for you, okay, but I was involved in a lot of sin in my life at the time.

    18:32-18:39

But for the first time in my life, somebody had shared the gospel with me in a way that I understood it, and that was because God was turning the lights on, right?

    18:40-18:49

And I understood the gospel, and I wish I could stand here and tell you, I just wholeheartedly jumped in. I heard the gospel, and I'm like, "Woohoo! Off to Bible college!" That wasn't the story.

    18:51-18:59

to my shame, during this season of understanding the gospel, but still living this sinful lifestyle.

    19:01-19:05

I remember saying, "I'm not sure what I want to do.

    19:05-19:23

I think I'm just going to go back to my old way of living." At this crossroads, I was considering walking away from what I now understood about the cross of Jesus Christ embrace the lifestyle that I'd been used to.

    19:25-19:26

But this was the sentence that changed my life.

    19:26-19:27

Do you want to hear it?

    19:27-19:28

    This sentence changed my life.

    19:29-19:49

As I was confessing this, like, hey, thinking about going back to my sin lifestyle, someone said to me, "Do you have any idea "how much God loves you?" And I walked away, and I thought to myself, "What?

    19:50-19:55

    A wicked idiot I am!

    19:56-19:59

That God would give His Son for me.

    20:00-20:03

Jesus would die for me in my place on that cross.

    20:05-20:09

That God would so lavish and demonstrate His love on me.

    20:10-20:14

And I would choose instead to live in the sewer.

    20:15-20:17

How could I be so foolish?

    20:17-20:23

And I was crushed by the weight of my own sinfulness.

    20:24-20:27

How can I turn my back on a God like this?

    20:29-20:30

    And it changed my life.

    20:31-20:34

Do you have any idea how much God loves you?

    20:35-21:42

Maybe that's why Paul in Romans 2, verse 4, says it is God's kindness that leads us to repentance. So how do I get back on track with worship? You have to breathe in the love of God. You have to breathe in the love of God. If you're not taking in God's love, if you're not understanding and meditating upon and reveling in the love of God in Jesus If you don't have a place to worship Jesus Christ we don't use that word anymore. I think we need to bring it back.

    21:44-21:50

What is reverence? You know what reverence is? It is deep respect.

    21:52-22:07

Not just like props. Reverence is deep respect. And some people have the audacity to have that as a title. Pastors, right? I'm Reverend Miller.

    22:08-22:09

Please don't ever call me that.

    22:10-22:11

    I hate that title.

    22:12-22:15

You know what, if pastors out there that use that title, hey, I'm not judging them.

    22:16-22:19

I'm just saying that only God is to be revered.

    22:21-22:27

My skin crawls when I hear a man want to take that title on himself.

    22:27-22:28

    Call me reverend.

    22:31-22:32

    God deserves reverence.

    22:33-22:33

    Look at verse 6.

    22:36-22:40

The Lord says a son honors his father, and a servant his master.

    22:41-22:43

If then I am a father, where is my honor?

    22:43-22:46

And if I am a master, where is my fear?

    22:46-22:49

Says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name.

    22:50-22:51

    Jump down to verse 14.

    22:52-22:58

God says, for I am a great king, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

    23:00-23:00

    Do you see that?

    23:00-23:03

    Father, master, king.

    23:04-23:14

Some people want to identify God as like, "Grandpa, Santa Claus, the big man upstairs." Wrong, wrong, wrong.

    23:15-23:20

He is a father, he is a master, and he is a king, and that means he is to be revered.

    23:21-23:25

And that is so lost on the church today, this idea of reverence.

    23:27-23:32

This idea that we honor God, we fear God, we have this holy awe of God.

    23:32-23:35

We are just too happy to familiarize God.

    23:37-23:42

Speaking of things that make my skin crawl, the expression "the big man upstairs," I just hate hearing that.

    23:44-23:46

It just shows a complete lack of reverence for God.

    23:48-23:49

    He's not big.

    23:50-23:51

    He's infinite.

    23:51-23:53

    He makes big look small.

    23:53-23:55

    He's not a man. He's God.

    23:55-23:56

    He's not upstairs.

    23:59-24:01

Heaven is His throne The earth is His ottoman.

    24:04-24:07

It's time to get back, church.

    24:07-24:09

It's time to get back to revering God.

    24:10-24:19

Because when we breathe in His love, and we breathe out reverence for God, that's worship.

    24:21-24:22

    That's worship.

    24:24-24:27

So how am I doing regarding reverence?

    24:28-24:29

    you need to ask yourself.

    24:30-24:33

So in your outline, two questions I want to leave you with today.

    24:34-24:37

As you examine, you're going to see it straight from the text.

    24:38-24:39

Two questions you have to ask yourself.

    24:40-24:43

    Am I a worshiper or a faker?

    24:45-24:46

    Am I a worshiper or a faker?

    24:46-24:48

Here's two questions where you can evaluate for yourself.

    24:49-24:50

    Are you genuinely worshipping God?

    24:50-24:55

Are you genuinely breathing in His love and breathing out reverence?

    24:56-24:58

Are you doing that, or are you faking?

    25:00-25:03

Like, "How do I know?" Here you go. First of all, letter A.

    25:06-25:14

"Do I offer God my best?" Pick up in the text, God says that the priests despise His name.

    25:15-25:28

But you say, "How have we despised Your name?" "By offering polluted food upon My altar." But you say, "How have we polluted You?" by saying that the Lord's table may be despised.

    25:29-25:30

The Lord's table here refers to the altar.

    25:31-25:34

Okay, this is before Jesus instituted the Lord's Supper.

    25:36-25:39

You're saying that the Lord's table or the altar may be despised.

    25:40-25:41

    Look at verse 8.

    25:41-25:44

"When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil?

    25:46-25:51

And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil?

    25:53-25:54

    Present that to your governor.

    25:55-25:58

Will He accept you or show you favor?" says the Lord of hosts.

    25:59-26:05

"And now, entreat the favor of God, that He may be gracious to us.

    26:07-26:12

With such a gift from your hand, will He show favor to any of you?" says the Lord of hosts.

    26:15-26:16

Do I offer God my best?

    26:17-26:20

A lack of reverence always shows up in your conduct.

    26:20-26:22

You will not offer God your best.

    26:23-26:33

You see, in the Old Testament times, during the times of this temple, when you were to go sacrifice to God, you were to take the absolute best from your flock.

    26:33-26:40

Okay? You were to go out to your herd or your flock, and you were to pick the unblemished, the very best.

    26:40-26:47

"I'm going to give back to God the very best that He's given to me." But do you see what happened by the time you get to Malachi's day?

    26:48-27:01

It says they took the blind, they took the lame, they took the sick, They'd go out to their flock and they'd see some animal on its deathbed, and they would say, "Well, this one doesn't have long to live.

    27:02-27:23

Let's offer it to God before it dies." Like, "Oh, yeah, I get the sacrifice thing, Pastor Jeff, but again, that doesn't really apply today." If you're thinking that, that these principles don't apply, honestly, what you're saying is because of Jesus, God is okay with lame worship now.

    27:25-27:26

    Would you say that?

    27:27-27:33

Because Jesus came and completed His messianic mission, God is just fine with lame worship now.

    27:36-27:43

Compare us in our day to the people Malachi was addressing in his day.

    27:45-27:46

Us versus them. Let me ask you.

    27:47-27:53

Should we be more fired up or less than them?

    27:54-27:55

    What do you think?

    27:56-28:00

Should we be more fired up about God or less fired up about God?

    28:01-28:01

    Not sure?

    28:04-28:05

    Well, consider this.

    28:07-28:08

We live under the new covenant.

    28:08-28:14

The Messiah, from our perspective, and in our timeline in history, the Messiah has come.

    28:14-28:17

and the Messiah saves us from our sins by dying in our place.

    28:18-28:21

Jesus Christ rose from the dead to give us eternal life and the promise of heaven.

    28:21-28:27

The Holy Spirit has come and indwells all believers, empowering, comforting, and guiding.

    28:28-28:32

So should we be more fired up or less fired up for worship than the Old Testament saints?

    28:33-28:34

    We should be more, right?

    28:34-28:35

    We should be more.

    28:38-28:48

But church, when we roll in here, not ready to worship, When it's our turn to teach the kids and harvest kids and we don't prepare ourselves.

    28:49-28:52

When we lead a small group and we just phone it in.

    28:53-28:56

When the offering comes around and we just give God a tip.

    28:58-29:02

You know, somehow the waitress gets 15% and God gets 10.

    29:03-29:04

    Doesn't seem right.

    29:06-29:10

When all those things happen, you're not giving God your best.

    29:12-29:22

Look at verse eight again, where the Lord is condemning them for their half-dead sacrifices they were making.

    29:23-29:26

But middle of verse eight, you see that God says, "Present that to your governor.

    29:26-29:31

"Will he accept you or show you favor?" Try paying your taxes like that.

    29:32-29:33

Could you imagine next tax season?

    29:33-29:34

    Could you imagine?

    29:35-29:38

Next tax season, you're like, "You know what I'm gonna do?

    29:39-29:41

    "I've been thinking about this.

    29:41-29:42

I'm going to pay what I want to pay.

    29:43-29:44

And they're going to have to be fine with it.

    29:46-29:47

    Is that going to work?

    29:49-29:51

That is not going to work.

    29:52-29:53

And so do you see God's point?

    29:53-30:00

If that's not going to work in paying your taxes, why do you think it's going to work for the king of the universe?

    30:02-30:04

But that's exactly what people do.

    30:04-30:05

    The offering comes around.

    30:05-30:08

It's like, I'm going to give God what I think, and it'll be good enough.

    30:08-30:13

Whatever I give God will just be good enough, because I live under the new covenant, I don't have to tithe, right?

    30:13-30:15

So whatever I give God is going to be good enough.

    30:16-30:20

Lame! Lame! And you don't understand worship.

    30:22-30:26

Because you're not breathing into love, and that certainly is not breathing out reverence.

    30:28-30:31

You should prepare yourself for worship.

    30:33-30:37

I talked to a dear couple in our church this past week, and they were just chit-chatting, right?

    30:37-30:45

They were saying that one of the things they like to do is they find out the songs that we're going to be singing in church and they listen to them in the car on the way to church.

    30:46-30:46

    Isn't that awesome?

    30:48-30:57

So it's not like, "Let's get in here to worship." They're like, "Our worship starts in our driveway." So they're worshiping as a couple on the way in, and then they come to church.

    30:57-30:58

Do you think they're ready to worship?

    30:59-31:01

    Yeah, they are.

    31:02-31:08

Talked to one of the leaders of our church this morning, who said, "Yeah, I knew we were going through Malachi, so you know what I did?

    31:08-31:18

I have the Bible audio, and I've been listening to it when I go to bed." Do you think that guy came into church ready to hear what the Lord has to say through Malachi?

    31:20-31:23

So you have to ask yourself, "Am I offering God my best?

    31:24-31:36

Or am I just willing to phone it in? It's good enough." Last question. Do I just go through the motions?

    31:38-31:39

Do I just go through the motions?

    31:41-31:42

    Look at verses 10-14.

    31:44-31:55

The Lord says, "Oh, that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire on my altar in vain.

    31:55-32:00

I have no pleasure in you," says the Lord of hosts, And I will not accept an offering from your hand.

    32:03-32:13

For from the rising of the sun to its setting, my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering.

    32:14-32:19

For my name," here it is again, "for my name will be great among the nations," says the Lord of hosts.

    32:21-32:29

But you profane it when you say that the Lord's table is polluted and its fruit, that is, its food may be despised.

    32:30-32:37

But you say, 'What a weariness this is!' And you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts.

    32:37-32:45

You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering.

    32:46-32:48

Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord.

    32:49-32:57

Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock and vows it, And yet, sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished.

    32:59-33:03

For I am a great king, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

    33:04-33:05

So are you a worshiper or a faker?

    33:05-33:07

Well, do you offer God your best?

    33:07-33:11

Secondly, ask yourself, do I just go through the motions?

    33:13-33:14

Do you see that in verse 13?

    33:16-33:18

    Jump back to verse 13.

    33:18-33:22

But you say, "What a weariness this is," and you snort at it.

    33:25-33:37

"What a weariness. I'm kind of tired of this. I'm just so tired of this church stuff. Boring!" What a pain to go to worship.

    33:40-33:43

You want to go to church this morning? "I don't know. It's a lot of work.

    33:43-33:51

We're gonna dress the kids, and I'm gonna have to get a bath and probably brush my teeth.

    33:51-33:54

    Oh, what a pain.

    33:57-34:11

When it becomes a burden to get here to worship, we find ourselves in this passage where the Lord says, "Your belly aching about what a weariness this is." He says, "You snort at it." Go ahead.

    34:11-34:12

What do you think that sounds like?

    34:12-34:13

    Go ahead.

    34:15-34:15

    That wasn't bad.

    34:17-34:18

You snored at it. Time to worship.

    34:21-34:22

    You snored at it.

    34:24-34:25

    Jump up to verse 10.

    34:27-34:28

    Look at this again.

    34:30-34:43

God says, "Oh, that there are one among you who would shut the doors." God would rather you stop worshipping than go through the motions without your heart being in it.

    34:45-34:45

I'm going to say that again.

    34:46-34:52

God would rather you stop worshipping than pretending to worship.

    34:53-35:35

God says, "I wish there was somebody down at the temple that would just shut and lock the doors, so the hypocrites don't come in and put on their little half-hearted show." You know, when I was preparing for this message, I was looking up articles online. I looked up, "What do I do when I don't feel like worshipping?" There were so many articles about that, and I went through and I read a few. Do you know one thing that was on all the articles? One thing was on all the articles. It says, "If you don't feel like worshipping, you should do it anyways." Every article said that. Here's a list. Ten things you should do when you don't feel like worshipping. Seven things you should do when you don't feel like worshipping. Here's the top 26 things you should do when you don't feel like worshipping. Every list. "You should worship anyways." "You should worship You should worship anyways.

    35:35-35:45

And in the Bible, God's like, "You don't feel like worshiping? Don't!" "Shut and lock the door and stay home." So hear me.

    35:46-35:49

If you're like, "You know what, Pastor Jeff, I want to get back on track.

    35:49-35:51

That's where my heart is, and I've just been struggling with stuff.

    35:53-35:59

And I'm really seeking the Lord to bring revival in my heart." Then absolutely, you should come.

    36:00-36:02

And you should worship if that's your heart.

    36:02-36:15

But if you're just coming in here, and you're like, "I don't want to stay, I don't want to go to the king." Like, "No effort, I don't care, when do we leave?

    36:16-36:21

How much longer is this going on?" You should just stay home, honestly.

    36:21-36:23

    You should. Just stay home.

    36:26-36:27

Because that does nothing for God.

    36:30-36:42

Mary Zacharias said, "When a man is bored with God, even heaven doesn't have a better alternative." So how about you?

    36:42-36:44

Are you going through the motions?

    36:45-36:46

    Are you bored?

    36:47-36:48

Can't wait to get out of here?

    36:50-36:54

If that's you, this is your wake-up call from the Lord.

    36:55-36:58

It's time to get back on track.

    37:00-37:03

It has to start with worship.

    37:06-37:07

I'd like you to bow your heads.

    37:07-37:11

I'm not going to ask you to raise your hand or stand up or come forward or anything.

    37:11-37:12

I'm not going to ask you to do that.

    37:12-37:22

I just want you to bow your heads, but I want to ask you with your head bowed, is there someone here this morning that says, "You know what, Pastor Jeff, I have not been giving God my best.

    37:22-37:23

    I haven't been.

    37:26-37:30

I've been content to just go through the motions.

    37:32-37:39

Quite honestly, it's not very exciting right now, my walk with Christ.

    37:40-37:42

Does that apply to you today?

    37:43-37:46

Like, I know I need to get back on track, but right now I'm just not feeling it.

    37:48-37:50

With your head bowed, I want to remind you that it's time to breathe again.

    37:53-37:54

You need to breathe in God's love.

    37:56-38:03

You need reminded that your heavenly Father loves you so much that He sent His Son to die in your place.

    38:05-38:15

Your heavenly Father loves you so much that He has chosen to make His holy habitation your very heart, with the presence of His Holy Spirit in you.

    38:17-38:19

You need to breathe in His love again.

    38:21-38:23

You need to breathe out reverence.

    38:26-38:29

Yes, He is my Savior, but He is also my King.

    38:32-38:38

And I haven't been treating the Lord God like a king whom I should revere, honor, and obey.

    38:40-38:42

And it's time to breathe out reverence again.

    38:45-38:55

Our Father in Heaven, again, I pray for myself for my brothers and sisters here, that we would stop phoning it in.

    38:57-39:09

We would stop making a half-hearted effort in serving You and saying, "Well, that's good enough." Father, I pray that You would restore in us a heart of worship.

    39:11-39:16

That, Father, we would breathe in Your love in a fresh way.

    39:18-39:25

that we would breathe in this love that was willing to pay the ultimate price so that I could be free.

    39:27-39:33

The love that can never be lost, because it's love that was never earned.

    39:35-39:51

You have chosen to love us in Jesus Christ, and I pray Father you would hit us Again, hit me again the way you did when I first understood that message.

    39:53-39:58

Father, I pray that we would show you the reverence that you deserve.

    39:59-40:03

As you said so clearly in your word, you are a father, you're a master, you're a king.

    40:05-40:21

Let our conduct, let our attitudes in the home, at our workplace, in the church, wherever we find ourselves, let them reflect that we are subservient to the king who loves us.

    40:24-40:36

Get us back on track, God, by giving us a fresh start today in being true worshipers of you.

    40:37-40:41

Pray these things in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Malachi 1:1-14

  1. Malachi 1:2-3 talks about God's love: What exactly is God saying? How does this prove His love?

  2. Why is love the motivator for worship (see also Romans 2:4)?

  3. Have you ever doubted God's love because things weren't happening the way you expected? Share the experience with the group.

  4. Define reverence: Why do you think this is a lost concept in our culture today?

  5. How would you reply to this statement: "This stuff in Malachi doesn't apply to us today. We don't offer sacrifices anymore!"

  6. What are ways, today, that you can "breathe out" reverence for God?

Breakout Questions:
Complete transparency: How are you doing with sincerely worshiping God? What changes do you need to make to be able to "breathe" (in God's love / out reverence for God)?
