Pillars of Harvest

Harvest DNA – Part 4: Unafraid Witness.

Review / Introduction:

Your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ!

Matthew 5:16 - In the same way, let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

1 Peter 3:15 - but in your hearts, regard Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

Proverbs 28:1 - ...the righteous are bold as a lion.

Three Things You Need to Know to Be a Bold Witness (1 Peter 2:11-12):

  1. Know what you are: Alien. (1 Peter 2:11a)
  2. Philippians 3:20 - But our citizenship is in heaven...

  3. Know what to fight: Your Sin. (1 Peter 2:11b)
  4. Know how to act: Honorable. (1 Peter 2:12)

  • 00:35-00:39

Open up your Bibles with me, please, to the book of 1 Peter.

    00:40-00:41

We're going to be in chapter 2.

    00:43-00:48

We are on the tail end of a four-week series called Harvest DNA.

    00:50-00:59

And we're basically just answering one question, and the question is, "What kind of church is this?" Well, we are a church that sits on four pillars.

    00:59-01:03

And the first pillar is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    01:04-01:06

We believe that God wrote this book.

    01:06-01:15

So when I, or next week Dan Thompson is going to be bringing the message, when we stand up, we are proclaiming the Word of God.

    01:16-01:19

So much as we communicate what God said in His Word.

    01:20-01:21

    We do that without apology.

    01:22-01:25

The second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus in worship.

    01:28-01:31

There's something special to our Lord about worship.

    01:31-01:33

The biggest book in your Bible is Psalms.

    01:34-01:35

    And that's corporate worship, right?

    01:36-01:41

And Jesus told the woman at the well that the Father is seeking people to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

    01:43-01:44

    That's our second pillar.

    01:44-01:51

"Lifting high the name of Jesus through worship." Our third pillar we talked about last week is "believing firmly in the power of prayer." We saw that last week, didn't we?

    01:51-01:53

Jesus said, "Ask and you will receive.

    01:53-01:54

    Seek and you will find.

    01:54-01:59

Knock and it will be opened to you." Our fourth pillar.

    02:01-02:08

of a church is this, our fourth pillar is sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    02:11-02:26

Many many years ago when Aaron and I were first married, she was actually getting ready to go to work and she was just about to go out the door and somebody showed up at our door and it was this guy selling meat out of the back of a truck.

    02:28-02:40

So Erin's on her way to work and this guy's like, "Hey, you know, he probably had a better sales pitch than I'm selling meat off the back of a truck." But anyways, Erin's like, "Hey, Jeff, just, she goes, could you talk to this guy?

    02:40-02:47

I gotta go." So Erin jumps in and she's like, "Just, I'm like, what do you want me to do?" She is, Erin goes, "Just do whatever you think.

    02:47-02:54

I gotta go." You can tell this was, Matt and Lexi, this was early on in our marriage because she trusted me to just do what I think.

    02:56-02:56

    She's learned.

    02:58-02:59

But anyways, you can just do what you think.

    02:59-03:09

So this guy, he pulls out this chest, this giant white chest, and he starts showing me all this meat that he had.

    03:09-03:13

He goes, "Hey, I got some T-bones here." He had something called a rump roast.

    03:13-03:18

And he's like, "I got soup bones here." And then he pulls out this pack.

    03:18-03:20

He goes, "This is Delmonica right here.

    03:21-03:41

"It's a Cadillac of the cow." And I'm just standing there like, "Whoa." And, well, long story short, I ended up, I'm ashamed I have to confess this, but I ended up buying about $500 worth of meat off this guy out of the back of his truck.

    03:43-03:44

    And she stayed with me.

    03:45-03:51

But anyways, later on that day, she, okay, and you guys that are married, you know, the husbands, you know what's coming next, right?

    03:52-03:55

Because now I, it seemed like such a good idea at the time.

    03:56-03:59

But then when Aaron called all of a sudden, I'm like, maybe that wasn't such a good idea.

    04:00-04:23

But Aaron's like, "Hey, what happened with that meat guy?" And I'm like, "I bought some." She's like, "How much did you buy?" And I'm like, "About $500 worth." She goes, "What?" And I'm like, "But it was the Cadillac of the cow." But I was just persuaded by that guy because he was compelling.

    04:25-04:27

And he was talking about a frozen dead cow.

    04:29-04:36

But you know, I think about that guy because we too, true or false, we too have a job of persuading people, don't we?

    04:37-04:46

We have a job of compelling people, of boldly sharing with people the difference that Jesus Christ makes in your life.

    04:48-04:59

I'll be honest with you, when the elders had asked me to preach through the four pillars of the church, Thinking about this one, I was like, well, how many sermons have we had about witnessing in the past three years?

    05:00-05:03

We've been going through the book of Acts for three years, right?

    05:03-05:04

    And we're almost done.

    05:04-05:06

But how many sermons about witnessing?

    05:07-05:14

And we spend so much time talking about things like having the right message.

    05:15-05:17

You know, having the right message, that's important.

    05:19-05:21

But there's something else that comes first.

    05:22-05:24

We've talked about having the right attitude.

    05:25-05:26

    And that's important.

    05:27-05:30

But there's something else that has to come first.

    05:30-05:32

We've talked about dealing with haters.

    05:34-05:35

    And that's important.

    05:36-05:37

But there's something else that has to come first.

    05:38-05:39

    We've talked about prayer.

    05:39-05:46

Hey, prayer is important, but there's something else that has to come first.

    05:47-05:52

There's something so foundational to your witness for Christ that none of us have the right attitude to do.

    05:52-05:54

None of these things are going to happen.

    05:54-06:01

Or, on the off chance that they do, they will not be affected.

    06:03-06:06

So one main point today, and the point is this.

    06:07-06:13

Your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ.

    06:15-06:17

That would be a great sentence to write down.

    06:18-06:21

Your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ.

    06:22-06:25

Every true believer wants to be a better witness, right?

    06:26-06:27

Here's where it has to start.

    06:27-06:31

It has to start with your walk with Christ.

    06:32-06:42

Your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ, and I know we've got some skeptics right here that are going to say, "You're going to have to prove that to me, and I'll be glad to." Here's a few verses I want you to consider.

    06:43-06:45

Think of Jesus in Matthew 5, Sermon on the Mount.

    06:46-06:58

Jesus said, "In the same way, let your light shine before others that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven." So you see, Jesus said in order for your light to shine, what has to happen first?

    06:58-07:00

God has to be shining His light in you, right?

    07:01-07:02

You don't have any light of your own.

    07:02-07:03

    You're like the moon.

    07:03-07:05

All you can do is reflect light.

    07:06-07:12

And Jesus said the way people are going to glorify God is when they see the light of the Lord shining through you.

    07:13-07:16

Actually, 1 Peter 3.15, a lot of people probably have this verse memorized.

    07:17-07:27

The second part of the verse that we're familiar with says, "Always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you." Can't have a sermon about witnessing without that verse, right?

    07:28-07:29

    We all know that verse.

    07:31-07:32

But do you know what the first part of that verse says?

    07:33-07:34

    Put that up.

    07:34-07:41

"But in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy." Do you see? It has to start in here.

    07:42-07:45

It has to start in here before it goes out here.

    07:47-07:50

Proverbs 28 verse 1, this is our theme verse of the year.

    07:52-08:08

The second half says, "The righteous are bold as a lion." As we're talking about sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness, who's bold according to Proverbs 28.1?

    08:08-08:09

    Who's bold?

    08:09-08:12

The well-informed are bold as a lion?

    08:13-08:13

    No, it doesn't say that.

    08:14-08:16

Does it say the Bible student is bold as a lion?

    08:16-08:17

No, it doesn't say that either.

    08:18-08:21

How about the longest tenured Christian is bold as a lion?

    08:21-08:22

    It doesn't say that either.

    08:23-08:25

It says the righteous are bold as a lion.

    08:25-08:26

    Who's a bold witness?

    08:26-08:33

The person that has the righteousness of Christ that God gives to those who receive Him.

    08:35-08:37

So if you wanna be a bold witness, here's three things you need to know.

    08:39-08:42

And we're gonna take these from 1 Peter 2.

    08:42-08:43

We're gonna look just at two verses today.

    08:45-08:46

    Verses 11 and 12.

    08:46-08:48

Three things you need to know to be a bold witness.

    08:49-08:51

We're gonna kind of work through these verses together.

    08:54-08:56

    Number one, jot this down.

    08:56-08:58

    Know what you are.

    08:58-08:59

You wanna be a bold witness?

    09:00-09:01

First of all, you need to know what you are.

    09:04-09:05

    You are an alien.

    09:08-09:10

Now when I say the word alien, what do you think of?

    09:11-09:14

Well, it depends on how old you are, right?

    09:16-09:19

For some people, you might have thought of Mork from "Ork".

    09:21-09:23

How many people know Mork from "Ork"?

    09:23-09:25

    Okay, more than I figured.

    09:26-09:27

For some of you, you might have thought of Alf.

    09:29-09:29

    Remember Alf?

    09:31-09:33

Some of you might have thought of E.T.

    09:33-09:34

Who thought of E.T. as soon as I said alien?

    09:35-09:36

Okay, I thought I heard some people say that.

    09:38-09:39

Some of you may have thought of the predator.

    09:41-09:42

Would you like to hear my imitation of the predator?

    09:44-09:44

    All right, you ready?

    09:48-09:48

    (imitating predator)

    09:49-09:51

Like, what do you do all week, Pastor Jeff?

    09:52-09:52

    (congregation laughing)

    09:55-09:56

    Working on my predator imitation.

    09:57-09:58

Some of you might've thought of Superman.

    10:00-10:12

Or some of you might've thought of that, remember that movie "Alien" and then there were aliens and more aliens and a big scorpion looking thing with the head and the thing that comes out of its mouth, you know what I'm talking about?

    10:12-10:14

Some of you may have thought about that.

    10:16-10:30

Actually, look at 1 Peter 2.11, it says, "Beloved, I urge you as sojourners in exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh." Let's stop there.

    10:30-10:33

He says, first of all, here's your identity, church.

    10:35-10:38

You're a sojourner and an exile.

    10:38-10:40

Now these words in the Greek, they're interesting words.

    10:41-10:46

Sojourner in the Greek literally means, I dwell near people not of my kind.

    10:46-10:48

That's what a sojourner is in the Greek.

    10:48-10:50

I dwell near people not of my kind.

    10:51-10:59

And an exile, that's a compound word in the Greek that literally translates to nearby stranger.

    11:02-11:08

So biblically, when we talk about aliens, biblically, we are the aliens.

    11:09-11:15

Despite all the stuff you hear in the news about whatever, building walls or whatever to keep aliens out, here's the reality.

    11:15-11:19

If you're a born again believer in Jesus Christ, you are the alien.

    11:21-11:31

Meaning you're not of this place, you are living here temporarily beside people who aren't of your kind, worldly people.

    11:31-11:40

That's why Philippians 3.20, Paul says, "But our citizenship is in heaven." That's why you are an alien if you're a follower of Christ.

    11:40-11:42

    You're a citizen of heaven.

    11:44-11:51

In March, Russ House from our church is going to India and you're going to be helping to build a training center for pastors, correct?

    11:52-11:56

Now I'm gonna go way out on a limb, I'm gonna assume there's some things you're not going to do while you're in India.

    11:57-11:58

And correct me if I'm wrong.

    11:58-12:00

I'm going to assume that you're not gonna buy a house.

    12:01-12:05

I'm going to assume that you're not going to buy furniture for this house you're not going to buy.

    12:05-12:12

You're not going to decorate around the furniture that you're not buying for the house you're not going to buy and I'm going to assume that you're not going to landscape.

    12:15-12:16

    Those are all correct.

    12:16-12:17

Do you know how I knew that?

    12:18-12:20

And we didn't talk about this beforehand.

    12:20-12:24

The reason, Russ wouldn't go over there and buy a house and furniture and all this stuff, why?

    12:25-12:27

Because he's not staying there, right?

    12:29-12:30

    It would be really dumb.

    12:31-12:37

Could you imagine Missy, like Russ was like, "Hey, I bought a house in India." Her reaction would be like Aaron when I bought the 500 pounds of truck meat.

    12:40-12:42

But you see, he's not staying there.

    12:44-12:48

He's only going to be there for a short amount of time.

    12:49-12:52

So because of that mindset, you're gonna be packing as light as possible, correct?

    12:53-12:54

Because you know, I'm just a passing through.

    12:55-12:59

And do you realize that same principle applies to us for our lives on this earth.

    13:00-13:05

And sometimes, Gildi, we act like we're going to be here forever.

    13:07-13:09

And we're just a passing through.

    13:10-13:12

So let me ask you this morning, are you a sojourner?

    13:14-13:15

    Are you an earth dweller?

    13:18-13:20

Are you living for here and now?

    13:21-13:22

Are you living for then and there?

    13:23-13:27

Because if you're living for here and now, that's a bad idea because no one has ever stayed here permanently.

    13:30-13:37

The reality is we're to hold lightly to the earth and we're to hold tightly to our faith and somehow we get that backwards.

    13:37-13:47

And then when it comes to witnessing, church, church, when it comes to witnessing, we have a tendency to compromise and go with the world.

    13:49-13:51

    We embrace the world's values.

    13:51-13:54

We want to imitate the world even in the church.

    13:55-14:00

And we think, we think in the church, if we imitate the world, we're going to draw the world.

    14:03-14:04

    Here's what ends up happening.

    14:04-14:19

We tell the world, "Hey, I'm just like you." And their response is, "Well, then what do you have to offer me?" Because the appeal of the gospel is that Jesus followers are not the same as everyone else.

    14:21-14:26

We are citizens of heaven passing through, holding different values and purposes.

    14:27-14:29

So first of all, you're gonna start here, know what you are, you're an alien.

    14:31-14:35

Number two, know what to fight, your sin.

    14:37-14:38

    You gotta fight your sin.

    14:41-14:42

Look at the second part of verse 11.

    14:43-14:55

He says, "As sojourners and exiles, "abstain from the passions of the flesh," look at this, "which wage war against your soul." Our war isn't with the world.

    14:57-15:02

And in our hotly contested political climate, sometimes we act that way, right?

    15:03-15:04

Our war is with the world.

    15:04-15:06

Our war is not with the world.

    15:06-15:08

Our war is with our sin.

    15:09-15:11

That's why Peter calls it the passions.

    15:12-15:13

    The passions.

    15:13-15:17

We have this - if you're a born again believer in Christ, do you realize what you are?

    15:19-15:21

    You have this new nature.

    15:21-15:22

    You are born again.

    15:23-15:31

You have the Holy Spirit living inside you, but what the Holy Spirit is living inside is this old, decaying, corrupted body.

    15:31-15:33

It's what the Bible calls the flesh.

    15:34-15:38

And this flesh is corrupt and still wants to sin.

    15:39-15:41

My body still wants to sin.

    15:41-15:51

My body still has these fallen, corrupt passions in them that this new nature that I have in Christ Fighting!

    15:53-15:59

That's why Paul says in Galatians 5, he says these two things are at war so you don't do the things that you want to do, right?

    16:00-16:01

    Romans 7, same thing.

    16:02-16:03

    That's why there's a war going on.

    16:05-16:12

You need to wage war against the passions of the flesh because they're waging war against you.

    16:14-16:16

What is it in your life that you want to keep from God?

    16:18-16:20

What is it in your life that you've got to have now?

    16:20-16:23

    What is your favorite sin?

    16:25-16:26

What if we just passed the microphone around?

    16:27-16:28

    What's your favorite sin?

    16:30-16:31

    You know what it is.

    16:33-16:35

    Is it sexual in nature?

    16:35-16:37

That's for a lot of people.

    16:39-16:39

    Is it hatred?

    16:41-16:44

Is it addiction of some kind to some substance?

    16:45-16:46

    Is it complaining?

    16:48-16:50

I understand that sin is the real enemy here.

    16:50-16:57

Specifically, my sin is my real enemy.

    16:57-16:59

My sin seeks to distract me.

    17:00-17:02

My sin seeks to discourage me.

    17:03-17:06

My sin seeks to enslave me.

    17:06-17:08

In Christ it can't condemn me.

    17:09-17:25

But if I ignore the war that it is trying to wage against my soul, if I make excuses for my sin, tolerate my sin instead of turning from my sin, it's going to render me spiritually weak and ineffective.

    17:27-17:31

It's going to leave me wondering where the abundant life is that Christ promised.

    17:32-17:33

    Oh, it's there.

    17:33-17:44

I'm just unwilling to deal with my sinful passions that are waging war on my soul, and embrace what Christ freely offers instead.

    17:46-18:02

To paraphrase D.L. Moody, "The person that I have the most problems with in this world is Jeff Miller." Now, D.L. Moody didn't say that he had the most problems with me.

    18:03-18:06

His quote was, he was his biggest problem.

    18:06-18:09

And I read that this week and I thought I can identify with that.

    18:09-18:22

I think of the past 20, however many years of ministry I've been involved in, by far my biggest adversary, my biggest problem person in any church I've ever been to, is this guy right here.

    18:23-18:25

    There's a war being waged.

    18:27-18:31

I kind of like to hear that because he doesn't say battle.

    18:31-18:37

He doesn't say battle, and that's encouraging for me because you may lose some battles along the way, right?

    18:38-18:40

    But victory's already been won.

    18:41-18:42

That's the good news of Jesus Christ.

    18:43-19:02

want. So I want to encourage you today, maybe somebody sitting here today is fresh off of a loss. I want to encourage you to get back at it. You know what a boxer loses a round? Okay, well you just come out swinging harder the next round.

    19:03-19:12

Or maybe a mom with all these kids has a really rough day. Okay, we're gonna put a We're gonna plan together and we're gonna come out tomorrow and do better.

    19:14-19:15

Did you lose your round with your sin?

    19:17-19:18

    Well let's change the strategy.

    19:21-19:22

Come out more determined to win.

    19:23-19:25

I want you to see here, please don't miss this.

    19:27-19:30

If you miss everything else I say today except one thing, please catch this.

    19:31-19:35

This is the strategy that you must employ in your war on sin.

    19:36-19:36

    Please hear me.

    19:37-19:38

It's right here in the text.

    19:38-19:39

    I'm not making this up.

    19:39-19:48

He says, "To abstain from the passions of the flesh which wage war against your soul." Here's your strategy for battle.

    19:48-19:49

    Are you ready?

    19:49-19:51

    It's abstaining.

    19:52-19:54

You know what that word literally means?

    19:55-19:58

    It means put distance between.

    20:00-20:01

That is how you battle your sin.

    20:02-20:04

    You put distance between it.

    20:05-20:07

    between you and your sin.

    20:09-20:23

Okay, so if we have a guy here today saying, "You know, Pastor Jeff, you're right, I need to battle this drinking problem that I have, so I'm going to be taking my Bible to the bar from now on." Bad idea.

    20:25-20:37

Or the person that says, "You know, I've really been struggling with lust in my life, so I'm going to be asking my small group to meet with me at the Gentleman's Club." It sounds foolish. It is.

    20:39-20:44

Maybe somebody here is thinking, "You know what? You're right about this battling the sin thing.

    20:45-21:03

I'm going to be going on a retreat to Rivers Casino to seek the Lord about my gambling problem." Don't try to fight your sin head on because listen, you will lose every single time you try to fight your sin head on.

    21:03-21:04

    Not me, yes you.

    21:05-21:12

You mean to tell me Adam and Eve, who didn't even have a sin nature when they were tempted, they fell into sin.

    21:14-21:16

They couldn't stand up to the temptation.

    21:16-21:24

And you think you, living in a fallen, corrupt, sinful body, you think you're gonna face temptation head on and you're gonna come out stellar?

    21:25-21:27

You think you're just gonna walk right into temptation?

    21:27-21:29

And it's not gonna affect me.

    21:29-21:31

You are foolish if you think that.

    21:32-21:43

That's why Peter says, here's the strategy, abstain, get away from it, put some distance between you and your sin so you're not even in the same zip code.

    21:46-21:48

What did Jesus teach us to pray about this?

    21:49-21:50

    Remember the Lord's prayer?

    21:50-21:52

Father, art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

    21:52-21:54

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

    21:54-21:56

Give us this day our daily bread.

    21:57-21:58

Give us this day our daily bread.

    21:58-21:59

What's the part about lead us?

    22:00-22:01

    How's that go?

    22:02-22:02

    Lead us not, what?

    22:04-22:06

Oh, do you think this is what Jesus was talking about?

    22:07-22:09

Notice Jesus didn't say lead us not into sin.

    22:10-22:11

It's like taking an even wider path.

    22:12-22:18

I don't even wanna be in the place where I might be tempted with sin.

    22:21-22:24

So here's a surefire way to not lose your fight against sin.

    22:25-22:25

    You ready for this?

    22:26-22:28

Here's a surefire way to not lose the fight.

    22:29-22:34

Determine the place where sin could tempt you.

    22:34-22:42

Determine the circumstance where sin wants to fight you and don't show up.

    22:44-22:50

You will never lose every fight you refuse to show up to.

    22:51-22:52

That's why Peter says to abstain.

    22:53-22:54

What do you need to do today?

    22:55-22:58

What do you need to do today to put some distance between you and your sin?

    22:59-23:01

    Put filters on your computer?

    23:03-23:04

Put your computer in the garbage?

    23:06-23:07

Is there a place that you need to stop going?

    23:09-23:13

Do you need to track down Ryan and Sarah so you have some small group accountability?

    23:13-23:15

    Some people who love you?

    23:17-23:21

Who are going to help you make sure that you're keeping your distance?

    23:22-23:28

Like, "Wait a minute, I thought we were talking about, I thought we were talking about witnessing today." Well, this is the point.

    23:28-23:31

Your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ.

    23:31-23:34

Because look at verse 12, as we wind down here.

    23:36-23:47

Verse 12, "Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable." So you see, all this inward stuff is going to be flowing out, right?

    23:47-23:53

"Keep your conduct among the Gentiles." When he says Gentiles, that's just a euphemism for unbelievers, right?

    23:53-23:54

I think we all get that.

    23:56-24:10

"Your conduct among the Gentiles is honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds, and glorify God on the day of visitation." Speak against you.

    24:10-24:24

The world, the Gentiles, they love to misrepresent followers of Christ, to the point of calling us "evildoers." More and more and more and more.

    24:26-24:35

Christian, you are going to be branded as an evildoer just because you say, "I believe the Bible is the Word of God." That is happening more and more.

    24:35-24:38

So I'm just - spoiler alert - it's going to happen.

    24:40-24:44

If you say, "Well, I believe the Bible says that life begins in conception.

    24:45-24:47

    That's why I am pro-life.

    24:47-24:52

That's why the Bible would lead me to believe pro-life.

    24:53-24:58

People are gonna say, "You're a rotten person for saying a woman shouldn't have a choice in what she does with her own body.

    24:58-25:04

What a evil, wicked person you are that would take that right away from the woman.

    25:05-25:12

What about the right of the baby?" You can say, "Well, I believe what the Bible says about marriage.

    25:15-25:16

One man, one woman, one lifetime.

    25:16-25:22

and that's what I believe, you're gonna be branded as an evildoer for just saying, I just, I believe.

    25:23-25:26

Notice there was no, I'm condemning anybody else in that statement.

    25:26-25:28

Remember that happened with Chick-fil-A a few years ago, right?

    25:28-25:32

Like the head guy was like, I believe in biblical traditional marriage or whatever.

    25:33-25:38

And everybody was like, boo, your sandwiches taste like hate and racism.

    25:38-25:39

    And like, what?

    25:39-25:44

He didn't say anything about, all he said was, I believe this.

    25:46-25:48

That's exactly what Peter's talking about here.

    25:50-25:58

The world is looking for reasons to reject the gospel, and they want to use you as the focal point of their rejection.

    26:03-26:37

But when you are sincerely walking with the Lord, and He is doing stuff in you, and He is doing stuff through you, and you are blessing the people who are cursing you, when you are encouraging the people who are insulting you, when you are doing good to those who would do you harm, when they see that you're always looking to do, as Peter says, the honorable thing, the day is going to come when God shows up in their lives. And that day, according to Peter, is called the day of visitation.

    26:39-26:40

    The day of visitation.

    26:42-26:44

I dropped this cross reference down, Luke 19.44.

    26:45-26:46

What is the day of visitation?

    26:46-26:48

That's kind of a weird term. What does that mean?

    26:48-26:52

That just means the day God shows up to save them.

    26:53-26:58

That's the day the lights come on in their lives.

    26:58-27:02

That's the day that they realize their sin has brought them nothing but misery.

    27:02-27:08

The day that God's Holy Spirit is speaking to them, calling them to receive Christ.

    27:09-27:11

Peter says they're going to remember your good deeds.

    27:11-27:13

They're going to remember your conduct.

    27:14-27:16

And that is going to lead them to glorify God.

    27:16-27:19

In other words, that's going to lead them to receive Jesus Christ.

    27:21-27:28

So now do you see why your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ.

    27:29-27:31

So know how to act honorable.

    27:32-27:33

    Honorable.

    27:35-27:36

    Let Christ change you.

    27:37-27:41

Let the world see the changes that Christ made in you, and you will be a bold witness.

    27:43-27:56

Every Christ follower wants to lead others to follow Christ, but you can't lead anyone to a place that you're not in.

    27:58-27:59

So do you want to be a bold witness?

    28:00-28:01

Know what you are. You are an alien.

    28:03-28:04

    Secondly, know what to fight.

    28:06-28:12

Your sin, it's waging war against you, and you're going to fight by not showing up, right?

    28:13-28:15

Thirdly, know how to act honorable.

    28:16-28:33

Honorable, so that when the Lord shows up, they're going to remember, "Ah, I see how Christ was at work in those people's lives." Your walk with Christ determines your witness for Christ.

    28:34-28:34

    Let's pray.

    28:35-28:42

Father in heaven, You have called us to be witnesses, but before even that, You have called us to be holy.

    28:44-28:52

Father, there's not a single one of us in this room, there's not a single one of us on this planet that have the capability of being holy ourselves.

    28:54-28:59

Your Word tells us that You have given us Your holiness, You have given us Your righteousness through Jesus Christ.

    28:59-29:10

And You have empowered us by Your Spirit to continue to grow and mature and develop to be more and more practically holy.

    29:12-29:17

Father, today I pray that we would be people who are determined that we're going to cooperate with You.

    29:17-29:20

We'd stop clinging so tightly to the things of the earth.

    29:23-29:34

Father, today I pray that You would be very specific with us Father, show us our point of temptation and show us how we can not show up to even fight it.

    29:36-29:37

    Show us how to abstain.

    29:38-29:46

Father, show us how we can love the lost people around us in such a way that the day's going to come, the lights are going to come on, God.

    29:47-29:49

    You're on a seeking mission.

    29:51-29:56

And they're going to remember the witness of Christians put in their lives, Father.

    29:57-29:58

This is all to Your glory and honor.

    30:00-30:02

    Make us bold witnesses, Father.

    30:03-30:09

Let us start with a sincere, authentic, growing, personal walk with Christ.

    30:11-30:13

In whose name we pray, Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read 1 Peter 2:11-12

  1. What is the connection between your walk with Christ and your witness for Christ? Why?

  2. How do passions wage war on your soul? Even though a believer cannot lose their salvation, how is sin still harmful to the soul?

  3. How would you instruct someone wanting to fight their "besetting" sin?

Breakout Questions:

How, specifically / personally, do you need to "put distance" between you and your sin? Pray for each other to apply wisdom in this war on sin.

  • Pastor Jeff:

    00:35-00:39

Grab your Bibles with me, please, and open up to Matthew 7.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:40-00:49

Matthew 7, this month we're going through a series called "Harvest DNA." The question is, what kind of a church is this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:50-00:52

What kind of a church is this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:52-00:53

Well, our mission is to make disciples.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:54-00:59

We want to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:59-01:00

    That's our mission.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:01-01:02

    We want to make disciples.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:02-01:04

That was given to us by Jesus, by the way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:04-01:05

    We didn't make that up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:05-01:09

Our elders didn't sit down and decide what do you think the church should do?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:09-01:11

Jesus told us what the church is supposed to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:11-01:12

    We're to make disciples, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:13-01:17

And we spent the first two weeks looking at what kind of a church is this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:17-01:21

We talked about pillar number one, which is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:21-01:30

We believe that God wrote a book, and God's Holy Spirit somehow works with His book to bring about life transformation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:31-01:35

That second pillar we discussed last week Jesus said worship.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:36-01:40

That worship is the way that we can engage the Lord.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:40-01:42

    We can love the Lord.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:42-01:45

We can have that relationship with the Lord with our very emotion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:48-01:53

And Jesus said that the Father is looking for worshippers, people to worship Him in spirit and in truth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:53-01:55

And we want to grow as worshippers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:56-02:00

Today, we're going to talk about prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:02-02:05

And prayer is somehow the easiest

    02:05-02:09

and the hardest thing to get down, when you think about it.

    02:11-02:18

In James 4, verses 2 and 3, James says this very bluntly regarding prayer.

    02:18-02:31

He said, "You do not have, because you do not ask." How many blessings in your life do you think you might have forfeited, Just because you haven't asked God.

    02:34-02:34

    Then he goes

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:34-02:39

on, he says, "You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:40-02:50

Suspend it on your passions." So he says, the problem is when you do ask, when you do pray, you don't get what you want because you're asking wrongly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:50-02:55

So the bottom line is, we really only have two problems when it comes to prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:56-02:58

We either don't ask or we ask wrongly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:01-03:02

So how do we ask wrongly?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:02-03:03

I want you to jot this down in your outline.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:03-03:04

    How do we ask wrongly?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:05-03:06

    Here are three powerless prayers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:08-03:10

These are prayers that have no power.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:12-03:18

But these are prayers that every one of us, including myself, we have all been and are guilty of saying.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:19-03:26

These are three powerless prayers, and my hope is that by calling them out, we are more able to recognize them and be done with them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:27-03:30

But the first powerless prayer is the "Pray it safe" prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:31-03:32

That's the "Pray it safe" prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:34-03:40

Meaning, when we pray, we don't want to pray too big or too specific because we don't want to get our hopes up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:40-03:41

We don't want to get disappointed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:42-03:43

    So we are all guilty.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:43-03:48

I have caught myself doing this, listen church, I've caught myself doing this while I was praying.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:48-03:51

And literally, I've apologized to God in prayer for doing this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:52-03:54

Like, I'm sorry, what was that prayer?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:54-03:55

    That was a dumb prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:56-04:00

We pray dumb things because we're afraid to get our hopes up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:00-04:01

    So we pray vague.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:02-04:03

What do you mean dumb things?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:03-04:05

    We pray some dumb things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:07-04:12

For example, we often pray, "God be with me today." That's a dumb thing to pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:13-04:14

You know why that's a dumb thing to pray?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:15-04:17

    He's already promised that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:17-04:19

Do you realize God said He'll be with you to the end of the age?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:19-04:35

He said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." And we're like, "God, will you be with me today?" "Yes! I already told you that." It's like, "God, will you make the waters blue today?" "Yeah, they're blue, all right? I already done that." But we pray that all the time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:37-04:41

And I think we do that because we're afraid of being disappointed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:41-04:43

What if I pray really specifically and God doesn't do it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:45-04:46

We're going to talk about that today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:47-04:48

    God be with me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:50-04:52

Here's another pray and save prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:54-04:55

    How about this one?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:55-04:58

"God bless grandma," or insert person of choice.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:58-05:03

"God, I just prayed that you would bless grandma today." What is that? That is so vague.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:03-05:04

    Bless grandma with what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:05-05:08

    Like, bless her with what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:10-05:11

    Does grandma need healing?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:13-05:20

What if grandma gets coupons for Wendy's in the mail?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:20-05:22

    Is that how grandma's blessed?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:22-05:24

Is that an answer to the God bless grandma?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:24-05:25

    What does that mean?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:25-05:32

Why can't we get specific to say, God, here's what she is dealing with, and God, here's what I'm asking you to do for her.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:34-05:35

But you see that we don't do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:35-05:36

    We pray it safe.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:36-05:37

    We pray it safe.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:38-05:43

That way, if we say, God bless grandma, anything that happens in her life, we can just say that must have been God blessing grandma.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:45-05:51

Or if you really wanna be lame, just pray, God, I'm asking that you be with and bless grandma today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:53-05:58

And then if you listen real close, you could probably hear the head slaps happening in heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:00-06:02

Number two, the Santa Claus prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:03-06:04

    The Santa Claus prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:05-06:10

We're so guilty of this, we treat God like he's Santa Claus Or we treat God like our aforementioned grandma.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:11-06:13

Or we treat God like a vending machine.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:16-06:17

    Does anybody have this book?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:18-06:19

Mike, can you put that book up?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:20-06:20

    Here's a book.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:20-06:22

This was sent to me by a pastor friend.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:22-06:24

He asked what I was preaching on.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:24-06:28

I said, "I'm preaching on prayer." He goes, "You need to read this book." He said it jokingly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:29-06:49

It's "May I have your order, please?" Subtitle here is "How to Get What You Want from God." And I don't have a picture of the back cover, but the back cover says this, "Praying is like ordering off a menu and God is our waiter." I almost didn't wanna say that for fear of lightning bolts coming down on my head.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:50-06:57

But prayer is like, it's like we're in the restaurant and we're like, "Chop, chop, more bread, more bread.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:57-07:00

I asked for no ice in my diet Coke.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:00-07:03

Come on, God, what's the matter with you?" Like treating God like our waiter.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:03-07:05

How many people think that's a horrible idea?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:06-07:08

    Okay, good, good.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:08-07:10

Get that garbage off the screen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:12-07:14

God is not our waiter, he is our God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:14-07:17

All right, we better get some things straight here, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:19-07:21

Number three, the public performance prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:21-07:24

This is a prayer specifically that Jesus warned us against.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:25-07:29

The public performance prayer is this, the only time you pray is in small group or church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:30-07:30

    The only time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:31-07:39

The only time you pray is when you're in small group or when you're in church or when you're around other Christians or whatever, but you don't really have a private prayer life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:39-07:41

You really don't have a secret prayer life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:42-07:46

And when you only pray in church or in small group, the prayer is just for show.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:46-07:48

    That's not my opinion, that's God's opinion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:49-07:51

If you don't have a secret prayer life, then your prayer is just for show.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:54-08:15

Because Jesus said in Matthew 6:6, when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your father who is in secret and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." Jesus said, "Reward from prayer comes from praying in secret." And if you don't have secret prayer, you don't have a prayer line.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:19-08:23

You know it's real, you know it's not just for show when it's just you and God together.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:24-08:25

    That's real prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:26-08:32

We often set ourselves up for discouragement When we pray wrongly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:34-08:37

James 4.3 we saw that it's praying selfishly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:39-08:42

We don't ask, we talked about this last week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:43-08:45

We have unbiblical expectations when we pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:49-08:54

So, all of that said, we get to this passage we're going to look at, Matthew 7.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:55-08:59

And our experience doesn't match up with what the Bible says, if we're honest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:02-09:12

"How do we reconcile what we seem to have seen in our lives and what Jesus said?" But I want you by faith to receive the Word of God for what it is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:12-09:14

These aren't my words, these are God's words.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:16-09:21

And I'm not going to sugarcoat this or lessen the impact of what our Lord has said.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:22-09:25

I'm not going to try to explain around it, I just want to explain what He said.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:26-09:29

So if you're sitting here today and you're like, "I need an overhaul in my prayer life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:30-09:34

Your prayer life has been weak for a very long time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:34-09:36

I want to see God move when I pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:36-09:37

    Well, Jesus tells us how.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:37-09:47

Matthew 7, verses 7-11, and the title of this part on your outline, "How to Have Your Prayers Answered Every Time." Again, not my opinion. This is what Jesus said.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:47-09:49

How to have your prayers answered every time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:50-09:51

    Look at what Jesus said.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:52-09:55

He said, "Ask, and it will be given to you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:57-09:59

    "Seek and you will find.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:02-10:12

Knock and it will be open to you." Now I imagine, just at this point, I imagine there were some people while he was speaking kind of turned to each other and they were like, "Did he really say that?" Because look at the next verse.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:13-10:18

The next verse, "For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:19-10:26

And to the one who knocks, it will be open." Jesus is like, "Yes, I said it, and I'm doubling down on it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:27-10:33

Because not only is this true, this is true for everyone, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:35-10:41

And then he illustrates it in verse 9, "Which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:42-10:44

If he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:45-11:01

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more Will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who..." Say it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:03-11:08

"Ask Him." Now, ask, seek, knock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:08-11:11

Let's talk about this trifecta here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:12-11:17

Actually, some of you probably know this and studying this in the past time, but this is in the present imperative.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:19-11:23

What Jesus was saying was keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:26-11:27

But here's something that I learned this week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:28-11:33

You see, I used to think that these three things were just synonyms.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:35-11:37

Like Jesus was just being poetic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:38-11:44

Instead of just saying, hey, when you pray God answers, instead of saying that, Jesus was getting real poetic with us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:44-11:46

And he's like, oh, ask and seek and knock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:46-11:50

And I did a lot of study on this this week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:50-11:55

While you were doing what you were doing this week, my face was buried in this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:56-12:08

And I have to tell you, I am convinced that there is a much, much, much, much deeper truth here than I thought there ever was.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:09-12:15

See, what Jesus is talking about here, we're not talking about three synonyms for prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:15-12:17

We're talking about three levels of prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:18-12:20

    Of increasing maturity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:21-12:26

These are three types of prayer of increasing intensity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:26-12:32

Now, I want you to understand as we go through this, that these are not stages that you go through.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:36-12:41

Meaning, as a young Christian you ask, and then as an older Christian you seek, and then as a mature Christian you knock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:41-12:42

I'm not saying that at all.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:42-12:44

    Yes, these are increasing maturity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:44-12:59

these are increasing intensity, but these aren't stages that you go through as in, "Well, now that I'm done seeking, I'm done asking." I want you to think of these in terms of...

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:59-13:05

Ask, seek, knock. I want you to think of these three things in terms of communication with an earthly friend of yours.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:08-13:10

There are three different types of communication.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:10-13:12

There's probably more, but we're going to say three.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:13-13:18

There are three types of communication that you can have with an earthly friend of yours.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:19-13:21

And one of them is texting.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:23-13:25

Do you know Mark Ord is texting me right now?

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:26-13:29

Kristen, will you please tell him that I'm working and I'll get back to him?

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:29-13:35

He texted me right before service and said he's praying for us, and it wasn't literally right this minute.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:35-13:39

But texting is one form of communication, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:42-13:44

But there's other forms of communication with your friends.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:44-13:46

    Sometimes a text isn't appropriate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:47-13:48

Sometimes you get a call, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:49-13:50

Sometimes you actually have to call.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:51-13:53

But sometimes that's not enough either.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:54-13:58

Sometimes you need to put the phone away and you need to show up at the person's house.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:00-14:01

And so hear me on this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:03-14:12

The situation determines which avenue you're going to use and communicate it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:13-14:15

The situation determines which avenue you use in communication.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:16-14:21

For a lot of things, a text will do, but sometimes you actually need to talk to the person.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:23-14:27

And some things have to be discussed in person.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:28-14:29

    Right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:29-14:44

For example, I wouldn't show up at my brother's house at 3 in the morning, and he answers the door like, "Yeah?" "Hey, did you see that new show on Netflix?" He'd be up, but he wouldn't appreciate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:45-15:08

Like, "Dude, why didn't you just text me that?" Like, "Oh yeah, that was an inappropriate way of communicating, wasn't it?" Or it would also be inappropriate if I texted my brother and said, "Oh, by the way, I know you didn't know, but it was my job to inform you that mom died.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:09-15:10

Is that something that you text?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:11-15:13

No, that's not something you text.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:16-15:20

So you see different situations call for different types of communication.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:21-15:24

And I believe that's exactly what Jesus is talking about here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:24-15:31

As he's increasing maturity and intensity, the situation dictates the type of communication.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:33-15:35

So we're asking ourselves today, What are we talking about?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:35-15:37

How do I pray and receive answers?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:39-15:40

Well, it's two things today, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:41-15:42

And the first has some sub-points.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:43-15:44

    Two things today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:44-15:45

We're going to pray in humility, first of all.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:45-15:46

    Pray in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:48-15:49

    Pray in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:49-15:52

How do I pray and see my prayers answered every time?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:53-15:55

Well, we're going to pray for the things that God's already promised to answer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:56-16:05

I promise you, if you guarantee yourself that, "Hey, I'm going to pray for these things that Jesus told me to pray about," because He's already promised to answer, He's going to answer those prayers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:05-16:10

He's already told us ahead of time, "Yeah, you pray like this, you're going to get answers." So we can unpack this a little bit, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:12-16:12

    Pray in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:13-16:17

First of all, letter A, what kind of prayers are prayers of humility?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:17-16:21

We say, "I need your provision." I need your provision, that's asking.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:22-16:23

    That's the asking part.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:24-16:31

Asking is pleading, but asking by its very nature, asking by its very nature is humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:33-16:36

Like you have that friend that refuses to ask for help.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:36-16:37

    Why? Because they're proud.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:39-16:49

They won't ask for help. "I don't want any help." Humility says, "I need help." Humility says, "Look, I really need you." That's humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:50-16:53

And that's the attitude that has to start your prayer life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:54-16:59

To say, "God, I need you." Jesus illustrated this in Luke 18.9. I'm going to paraphrase.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:01-17:17

Luke 18, verse 9, Jesus told this story about this Pharisee was praying, and the tax collector was praying, and the Pharisee was like, "God, I thank you that I'm not like other people, and I give and I tithe and I'm awesome." And Jesus said he was just standing and talking to himself.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:18-17:21

Then the tax collector wouldn't even look up to heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:21-17:26

He says, "God, have mercy on me because I'm just a sinner, God, and I'm miserable.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:26-17:35

God, please have mercy on me." Jesus said, "That man went home justified." Because everyone who exalts himself is going to be humbled.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:35-17:39

Whoever humbles himself is going to be exalted.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:39-17:47

And the difference between the Pharisee and the tax collector, the Pharisee saw no need, there was no desperation, there was no urgency, and the tax collector had all of that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:49-17:57

He's like, "I have the need, I have the desperation, I have the urgency." So ask. Ask. Ask.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:57-18:03

Jesus said to ask. He says it like three times just in these couple verses that we look at today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:03-18:04

So what's keeping you from asking?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:06-18:06

    Ask Him!

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:07-18:08

    Ask Him!

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:10-18:12

Ask how? Well, here's two words I wrote down.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:13-18:15

    Ask specific and ask big.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:16-18:18

    Ask specific and ask big.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:19-18:27

And I can tell you as a parent, I get so frustrated when my 11-year-old is asking me for something, but he wants to be vague and beat around the bush.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:27-18:41

"Dan, what do you want, Cade? What would you like to do?" "I was kind of hoping..." "Just spit it out, man! Just tell me what you want!" "I can't help you unless you're specific." God wants us to be specific.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:43-18:47

How do I know I'm giving my son what he wants unless he's specific in what he's asking for?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:49-18:49

    Ask specific.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:50-18:54

How do you know that God's answering your prayers unless you're specific?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:54-18:55

    Can I say ask big?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:56-19:07

Do you think you're gonna ask God for something that God's like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, slow down." That's a little steep, don't you think?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:07-19:19

To be asking the owner of everything who creates things by speaking it into existence, whoa, you might have to let me get some stuff together here, maybe call in some help and maybe I can get back to you and help.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:20-19:22

Do you think you're going to overwhelm God with a request?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:23-19:23

    Do you think?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:24-19:27

God's like, you know, you want me to heal him of what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:28-19:29

I don't know how to do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:31-19:33

    Ask specific and ask big.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:34-19:36

You're like, but I don't have the faith to do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:39-19:41

You don't need a lot of faith.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:43-19:48

Like to remind you, quick analogy, I've shared this before, but it's so important and so appropriate here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:51-19:53

and very applicable now considering our weather.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:53-19:57

But the story goes of the kid who wanted to ice skate and the pond near his house froze.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:58-20:05

So he put his skates on, he runs down and he jumps on, but the ice was only like an inch deep because it hadn't frozen very long, he fell right through.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:06-20:09

Dad saw what happened, dad rescues him, kids traumatized.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:11-20:15

Well, the next week, ice freezes again, deeper freeze.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:17-20:20

The ice was two feet thick.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:21-20:22

Plenty strong enough to hold the kid.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:24-20:25

Well, this time the kid puts his skates on.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:26-20:28

He doesn't run and jump on the ice all boldly this time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:28-20:29

This time he does it very hesitantly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:30-20:39

He kind of goes out and very slowly, very deliberately, takes his time and then he starts skating.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:40-20:41

What's the point of the story?

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:41-20:42

The point of the story is this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:43-20:44

The first time he went out, his faith was strong.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:45-20:48

But what he had faith in was weak. Right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:48-20:54

The second time, his faith was weak, but what he had faith in was strong, and it held him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:55-21:01

And that's why people think, "Oh, you've got to have a lot of faith." No, you don't. Jesus said you need to have faith like a mustard seed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:02-21:09

If you just have a little bit of faith to step out onto that ice, that's all you need.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:10-21:14

It's not about the size of your faith, it's about the size of your God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:15-21:20

So pray in humility, "God, I need your provision." Letter B, "I need your wisdom." That's what we're praying.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:20-21:30

"I need your wisdom." But Jesus said, "Ask." Jesus says, "To seek." That's even more mature. Seeking that single-minded desire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:32-21:40

"God, there's a truth that I need to know here." What He's talking about here specifically is seeking wisdom.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:40-21:43

Do you know how many verses there are in the Bible talking about seeking wisdom?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:44-21:52

Proverbs 2.4 says, "If you seek it like silver and search for it as hidden treasure." That's how we're to search for the wisdom of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:55-22:02

If you discover a treasure map that you're sure, if you follow this treasure map, it'll take you to a treasure worth millions of dollars.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:03-22:05

    You're absolutely sure of that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:05-22:07

But there's one problem, the map is written in Spanish.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:08-22:10

Would you learn Spanish? I would.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:11-22:13

I'd be watching Dora the Explorer on loop.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:15-22:17

    Right? I'd learn Spanish.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:17-22:24

It would be my life's mission to learn Spanish so that I could use this map to find this treasure.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:25-22:28

The Bible says that's how we need to diligently go after seeking God's wisdom.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:29-22:31

That's how diligent we need to be.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:32-22:33

That's the urgency that we need to have.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:33-22:37

Seeking to know and apply and understand the things of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:38-22:39

That's a prayer God always answers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:40-22:42

How can I be a better spouse, God?

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:42-22:44

Give me wisdom to be a better husband to my wife.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:44-22:46

God, give me the wisdom to be a better parent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:47-22:49

God, how should I deal with this conflict at work?

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:49-22:52

Give me wisdom on how to represent You here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:52-22:54

God, how can I resist this temptation?

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:54-22:57

God always answers those prayers every single time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:59-23:00

But you have to be willing to seek.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:02-23:09

Right? Jesus said, "If you seek, you're going to find." So what are we praying for? We're praying in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:09-23:11

I need your provision. I need your wisdom.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:12-23:13

Thirdly, I need to serve you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:14-23:15

    I need to serve you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:17-23:27

So Jesus says, "Ask and it will be given. Seek and you will find." Look at the third one, "Knock and it will be opened to you." Three types of prayers - increasing maturity, increasing intensity, like communicating with a friend. Everybody with me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:28-23:30

The third one is, "I need to serve you." This is even more mature.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:30-23:39

This is more than just, "God, I'm asking You for something." This is more than just, "God, I'm seeking You for something." This is banging on the door.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:40-23:41

    Diligence. Diligence.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:41-23:43

"Hey, hey, I'm here. Let me in.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:43-23:48

I'm not leaving until you let me in. Let me in." Like, but what door?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:50-23:52

What door are we banging on?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:53-23:58

The door that we're banging on is the door to God's kingdom.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:59-24:04

Like, well, wait a minute, didn't I enter God's kingdom when I received Jesus? Absolutely. Yes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:04-24:06

And that's just one application here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:07-24:12

But there's more application here actually, because this is beyond salvation here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:13-24:26

This is, "God, I want to be a part of what You are doing." Opening doors is a common phrase for God granting access to serve Him in a particular venue.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:28-24:30

You know, believe me, here's a couple of verses.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:30-24:31

    Remember this from Acts 14?

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:32-24:40

They declared all that God had done with him and how he had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:41-24:59

Again, 1 Corinthians 16.9, Paul says, "For a wide door for effective work has opened to me." So when the Bible talks about opening doors, and when Jesus here is talking about knocking on the door, He's talking about serving God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:02-25:05

And I've met a lot of Christians in my life, and this is absolutely true.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:05-25:10

Every single sincere, honest, born again follower of Jesus Christ, this is absolutely true.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:10-25:12

They desperately want to serve Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:13-25:14

    Every one of them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:15-25:29

Whether it's making videos, or discipling kids, or leading a small group, or running the AV, or whatever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:30-25:46

Every sincere Christian that I've met desperately has something in them that says, "I just want to serve God with the talents He's given me." If you're diligently seeking for Hal to be a part of His work, Jesus said He always answers that prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:47-25:51

When you're knocking, the door is always going to be open for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:53-25:55

He's going to open doors for you to glorify Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:56-26:04

I'm sure you notice these three things - asking, seeking, knocking - maturity, but they also increase in your participation with God in the prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:04-26:05

    Did you see that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:07-26:11

In every one of these three things, your participation increases.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:13-26:14

    Like asking, anybody can ask.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:14-26:19

A child can ask, "Hey, can I have, can I please have, give me..." Anybody can ask.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:19-26:23

Seeking requires more participation though, because now you're the one looking.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:24-26:28

requires even more participation because you're banging on the door.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:31-26:36

This involvement is about a greater participation in prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:37-26:39

And that's about a deeper relationship with God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:41-26:44

Like how many people here would say, "Yeah, I want a deeper relationship with God." Anyone?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:44-26:46

"A deeper relationship with God, that's what I want.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:46-26:48

I want a deeper relationship with God." Well, how does that happen?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:51-26:57

happens when you are participating in the prayers with God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:59-27:00

Like, what do you mean by that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:01-27:02

Let me give you a couple of examples.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:03-27:06

If your prayer has been, "God, I want you to save my co-worker.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:06-27:08

I have this co-worker that doesn't know you and God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:08-27:12

I'm praying that you would save him." How do you think God wants you involved in that prayer?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:14-27:14

    Any thoughts?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:16-27:20

Maybe God wants to use you to witness to that co-worker.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:20-27:22

God wants you to invite that co-worker to church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:22-27:37

So as you're praying, "God, I want this person saved," and then you're like, "Hey, I want you to come to my church," and they come to church, and they hear the gospel, and receive Christ, and get baptized, and all of that, you were participating in that prayer with God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:39-27:49

And you're just like, "Wow, God, look what you did." Another example is you could say, "God, help my financial situation." God, help my financial situation." Well, how are you involved in that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:51-27:54

Maybe you need to go to Financial Peace University.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:54-27:58

Maybe you need to get another, maybe a part-time job or whatever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:00-28:05

"God, help my financial situation." Participating with God in prayer deepens your relationship.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:07-28:12

This happened to me several years ago, many years ago, when our kids were babies.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:14-28:17

We needed diapers, but we were completely out of money.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:17-28:19

We just were completely out of money.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:19-28:22

We had like 38 cents in the checkbook, I think.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:23-28:34

And we needed diapers, and Aaron was like, "What do you want to do?" And I'm like, "Let's just trust that God's going to provide." I had no idea. I was just...

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:34-28:36

Maybe that was faith, maybe I was just blowing smoke, I don't know.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:36-28:38

    But I wasn't in a good place.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:38-28:40

I was just like, "I don't know. I don't know what we're going to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:40-28:42

    We're just going to...

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:42-28:45

I guess God's going to provide, I don't know how though.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:47-28:49

I think that was faith, I don't know.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:50-28:54

But regardless, what are we going to do? We're out of diapers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:55-29:13

Wouldn't you know, by some strange coincidence, that week my brother calls me and says, "Hey, we're setting up this studio, taking pictures of this hospital equipment." It's like a one-day gig, pays really well, do you want to go do it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:13-29:32

And I'm like, "Yeah." So I hung out with my brother all day, we went to the studio, we built this, it was like an MRI machine or something, and he's like, "Hey, that was fun, you can have my share of the money too." And I went from having nothing to having way more than enough.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:34-29:35

And that was how God provided.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:38-29:54

So when we ask, when we seek, when we knock, you see, prayer isn't just, "I'm going to throw this prayer up here and hope that God does something." There's a participation that takes place, especially when we seek and when we knock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:56-30:11

And the promise is that if you come with the right attitude, which is humility and dependence, and you pray for the things that God would want for you, which is provision, wisdom, serving, your prayers are going to be answered every time according to Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:12-30:21

Because in verse 8, He says, "For everyone who asks receives." Everyone who seeks finds, everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:22-30:25

Obviously, everyone implied for all of those.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:26-30:30

So as we close here, how are we seeing our prayers answered?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:30-30:31

Well, we're going to pray in humility.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:33-30:35

But secondly, we can't leave this out because Jesus sure didn't.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:35-30:36

we're going to receive like a child.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:38-30:39

We're going to receive like a child.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:40-30:42

I'd like to remind you of the illustration Jesus used.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:42-30:46

Jesus said, "Which one of you, if a son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:48-30:55

Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent?" Jesus drives the point home with a relatable illustration.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:56-31:04

He says in verse 11, "If you then who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven and give good things to those who ask Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:07-31:08

    Receive like a child.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:09-31:10

    Jesus said, "You know what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:10-31:27

By nature you're an evil person, but even you being a wicked, evil person, even you know how to take care of your kids." So how much do you think a perfect father who's perfectly loving, who's all wise, and has all resources is going to take care of his kids?

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:29-31:34

Because no decent parent is going to deceive their child.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:34-31:36

That's the purpose of this bread and stone thing, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:37-31:39

That's the issue with the fish and the serpent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:40-31:48

See these things look alike, but one is good for you, and one is harmful.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:50-31:57

You know, a piece of bread, you know, Jesus' listeners wouldn't have thought of a big loaf of like wonder bread.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:57-32:01

they would have thought of like a little roll, a little biscuit, which would have looked like a rock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:02-32:07

If your kid asks you for bread, you're gonna give him a rock, break his teeth on it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:07-32:09

No, you're not gonna do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:10-32:12

You're an evil person and you wouldn't do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:13-32:17

If your kid asks for a fish, you're gonna trick him and give him a snake.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:17-32:19

    No, you wouldn't do that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:19-32:24

You're not gonna deceive him and you're not gonna give him something that would hurt him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:25-32:28

You know, through the week, thinking about how to illustrate this stuff.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:28-32:31

And sometimes meatballs just land on my lap.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:32-32:37

But this week I went to Five Below, you know, the dollar store for rich people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:40-32:44

And I had to get an iPad charger for Owen or something.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:44-32:46

And it was Cage was with me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:46-32:52

And as we're walking through, Cage is like, "The Bean Boozled Challenge, the Bean Boozled Challenge." He starts like freaking out.

    03:59-04:06

New Year's Eve, we get together and we celebrate and we sing, what's that song we sing?

    04:06-04:11

Old, old slang, old slang, old slangs.

    04:12-04:13

I should have looked that up.

    04:14-04:17

Anyway, singing is a very emotional thing, isn't it?

    04:19-04:25

How many songs on the radio are about a deep profession of love?

    04:27-04:28

How many songs on the radio are about heartbreak?

    04:30-04:34

How many songs on the radio are about passion?

    04:36-04:36

    Why?

    04:37-04:39

Why are these things the subject matter?

    04:39-04:40

    Because singing is emotional.

    04:41-04:48

Which is why singing is one aspect of worship that we really go after here.

    04:50-04:56

You see, Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love the Lord your God with your heart, with your soul, with your mind, with your strength.

    04:56-05:02

In other words, the greatest commandment is you are to love God with everything that is in you.

    05:04-05:08

So the question is, how do we love God with our emotions?

    05:11-05:19

Well, God gave us something that we are to use to love God with our emotions.

    05:19-05:21

And that thing that he gave us is music.

    05:22-05:28

That is how we worship God, how we love God with our emotions.

    05:30-05:31

Look at what C.S. Lewis said.

    05:32-05:43

He said, "I think we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses, but completes the enjoyment.

    05:45-05:46

    It is the appointed consummation.

    05:47-06:00

The delight is incomplete till it is expressed." He says it's not just expressing enjoyment, he says it's that praise that completes the enjoyment.

    06:01-06:05

Like when you're on a roller coaster, what do you typically do on a roller coaster?

    06:05-06:12

You sit there and stone-faced and have your church face on on the roller coaster?

    06:13-06:14

    No, what do you do?

    06:14-06:17

You scream, you laugh, you put your hands up.

    06:17-06:18

And why do you do that?

    06:19-06:24

Because somehow that expression completes the enjoyment.

    06:25-06:31

Or, I don't know if you heard, but there's a football game on today.

    06:34-06:40

When the team scores, why don't we jump up and scream and high-five each other?

    06:40-06:41

    Somehow that heightens our enjoyment.

    06:42-06:46

And it's the same with singing to the Lord.

    06:47-06:56

That expression, that praise, that letting that out before the Lord completes our enjoyment of our experience with the Lord.

    06:58-07:05

When it comes to this singing in music, you know God's pretty fired up about it.

    07:06-07:07

What's the biggest book of the Bible?

    07:08-07:09

    It's the biggest book.

    07:09-07:09

    Psalms.

    07:09-07:10

    And what's Psalms?

    07:11-07:12

    Israel's song book, right?

    07:13-07:17

The biggest book in God's Word is the Song Book.

    07:17-07:25

And Revelation chapters 4 and 5 describe heaven as the ultimate worship service.

    07:25-07:33

In fact, Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4 that the Father is seeking worshippers.

    07:35-07:36

That's why we're pretty fired up about it.

    07:36-07:44

And that's why pillar number two of Harvest Bible Chapel is lifting high the name of Jesus through worship.

    07:47-07:48

So let's look at Israel's songbook here.

    07:49-07:55

Psalm 34 says, "I will bless the Lord at all times.

    07:55-08:03

His praise shall continually be in my mouth." Notice that's not just a Sunday morning thing.

    08:04-08:05

    all times, continually.

    08:07-08:10

Verse 2, "My soul makes its boast in the Lord.

    08:11-08:12

Let the humble hear and be glad.

    08:13-08:25

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together." You can underline all the synonyms for worship in those verses.

    08:26-08:43

Bless, praise, boast, magnify, exalt, and I'd really love to spend time talking about all these, have time for that, but I do want to talk about one in particular. I want to talk about the word "boast." The reason I want to talk about boasting is because usually boasting has a negative connotation.

    08:45-09:08

So what is boasting? Boasting refers to that on which a person would value themselves. Boasting refers to that on which a person would value themselves. In When you hear somebody boasting, they're saying, "This is what makes me important." Right?

    09:08-09:16

For example, when you hear somebody boast about how much money they have, "Here's how much money I made last year." "Oh, you won't believe how much money I made last year." And, "Oh, I'm doing really well at work.

    09:16-09:19

You won't believe how much money." You know why they keep saying that?

    09:19-09:21

What they're communicating to you is, "Hey, here's how important I am.

    09:21-09:22

Do you know how important I am?

    09:22-09:23

Let me tell you how important I am.

    09:24-09:27

I'm so important that they're throwing money at me." That's boasting.

    09:28-09:29

    Why money?

    09:29-09:30

    Because that makes me important.

    09:30-09:32

People boast about all kinds of things.

    09:33-09:34

    People boast about their muscles.

    09:35-09:36

Hey, guess how big my arms are.

    09:36-09:38

You wanna guess how big my arms are?

    09:38-09:39

Do you wanna guess how much I can bench press?

    09:40-09:40

    Do you wanna guess?

    09:40-09:40

    Do you wanna guess?

    09:41-09:41

    I can, yeah.

    09:43-09:43

    Why do they get it?

    09:44-09:45

Because let me tell you, this is why I'm important.

    09:46-09:48

    This makes me special.

    09:50-09:51

Please acknowledge how special I am.

    09:52-09:55

There are people boast that they, maybe they know a celebrity.

    09:56-09:58

Hey, do you know that I'm friends with so-and-so?

    09:58-10:00

    Ooh, you know so-and-so.

    10:00-10:26

Like, people boast about that, "That makes me important." "My accomplishments." "The type of job they have." All these things people think give them importance, but the Bible says, Jeremiah 9.23, 1 Corinthians 1.31, the Bible says, "Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord." Because He alone, listen, He alone is what gives you real value.

    10:29-10:33

If you know the Lord, only then do you have something to boast about.

    10:33-10:35

You're a recipient of his grace.

    10:35-10:37

So then you aren't even boasting in yourself.

    10:40-10:44

You're boasting about how awesome God is.

    10:44-10:45

    That's boasting in the Lord.

    10:46-10:47

    Like, look, you know what?

    10:47-10:50

I'm weak and helpless and nothing and totally dependent.

    10:50-10:53

And I am a speck of dirt.

    10:53-10:55

But let me tell you about my God.

    10:55-10:57

My God can save people like me.

    10:58-11:04

"My God takes care of me. My God provides for me." That's boasting in the Lord.

    11:06-11:31

So when you come in here, and the music starts, Darren gets up and he's playing the guitar, Jay's slapping the bass, Muckles pounding on the drums, Darren Keller's back there strumming his guitar, As soon as the music kicks up, you have a choice to make.

    11:32-11:36

And the choice is you can participate, or you can watch.

    11:36-11:39

And look, I'm not condemning at all.

    11:40-11:51

Because the sermon I want you to see, here's why I choose to participate, the sermon title here, "Why I'm Compelled to Worship." And I'm just going to share some things with you from the Word of God.

    11:52-11:54

    This compels me to worship.

    11:56-12:08

My hope is after you go through the text and evaluate your own life in light of the Word of God, when we fire up the music again, you're going to be compelled to worship.

    12:09-12:14

To express that emotion in boasting to the Lord.

    12:17-12:22

Number one, why I'm compelled to worship, the first reason is this, God has never disappointed me.

    12:24-12:26

    God has never disappointed me.

    12:26-12:36

2 Timothy 4-10 David writes, "I sought the Lord and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

    12:38-12:45

Those who look to Him are radiant and their faces shall never be ashamed.

    12:47-12:51

This poor man cried and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.

    12:54-13:00

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them.

    13:02-13:05

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.

    13:05-13:08

Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.

    13:08-13:14

Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack.

    13:15-13:31

The young lions suffer want and hunger, But those who seek the Lord lack no good thing." First reason we see right from the text why I'm compelled to worship is because God is never disappointed.

    13:32-13:48

Verse 5, look back there again, He says, "Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed." You have never met someone who sincerely trusted God, who sincerely looked to God and were or let down by God.

    13:48-13:49

    You haven't met that person.

    13:53-14:00

Now listen very closely to what I'm saying because I know we like to have fun and we laugh here, but this is a point that some people are going to check out.

    14:00-14:01

And I don't want you to do that.

    14:01-14:02

I want you to hear what I'm saying.

    14:04-14:06

    We face disappointments in life.

    14:07-14:08

    For sure.

    14:10-14:11

    From our circumstances.

    14:15-14:19

The question is, has God ever disappointed you?

    14:21-14:27

Because I know there's somebody sitting here today that's thinking, "Yeah, you know what? God has disappointed me." And I want you to check yourself on this.

    14:27-14:32

I want us to be really honest about this.

    14:33-14:42

If you think that God has disappointed you, have you had unbiblical expectations of God?

    14:43-14:50

this, are you claiming promises from God that He never made?

    14:52-14:54

Are you trying to cash checks that God didn't write?

    14:56-15:04

See, that's why some people are disappointed with God, because they are trusting God to do something that God never promised to do.

    15:06-15:15

Now, Erin and I had a dear friend that her mother, this friend's mother, was like in her late nineties, you remember?

    15:15-15:28

She was in her late nineties and a nursing home, foot in the grave, like ready to die any second for months living in this near vegetative state.

    15:28-15:30

Again, late nineties, lived a long life.

    15:32-15:36

Well, this friend's mother eventually died and our friend was completely distraught.

    15:37-15:40

I scream at God every day, why did you let my mother die?

    15:41-15:42

Why did you let my mother die?

    15:43-15:45

And she was so bitter towards God.

    15:47-15:52

And it's very hard to say compassionately, what were you expecting from God here?

    15:54-15:58

Were you expecting your mother to live eternally in perfect health?

    16:00-16:02

Because the Bible never promises that.

    16:02-16:03

Why are we mad at God?

    16:04-16:07

Are you trying to claim a promise from God that he didn't make?

    16:07-16:10

Because the Bible says that we're going to die.

    16:10-16:20

We're going to wear out and die appointed unto man wants to die and your mother actually had it pretty good living as long as she had, as healthy as she was for so long.

    16:22-16:25

Now that was this woman's situation, what about yours?

    16:25-16:32

Are you trying to claim promises from God that he never made because the reality is God has always delivered on what he's promised.

    16:33-16:36

And the provision that he promises and provides is perfect.

    16:41-16:47

you might say, "But I wanted this so bad and God didn't give it." Well, you know, Jesus described God as a father, right?

    16:48-16:51

And every parent knows you don't just give your kid everything that they ask for.

    16:52-16:54

And God in his perfect wisdom says, "You know what?

    16:54-16:55

That's not gonna be good for you.

    16:55-16:58

I'm not gonna give it to you." That's what Jesus said, right?

    16:58-17:01

If your son asks you for bread, are you gonna give him a stone?

    17:04-17:07

No good parent is going to do that.

    17:09-17:10

    God is a perfect parent.

    17:10-17:15

He's going to make sure that anything that comes from His hand is going to be good.

    17:15-17:20

That's why verse 10 He says, "I lack no good thing." Everything that comes from God is good.

    17:22-17:28

He says it's more likely that the king of the jungle is going to be in need than a child of God.

    17:29-17:33

And that's the satisfaction that Jesus Christ offers.

    17:34-17:38

When you hunger for the things of God, going to be fulfilled.

    17:42-17:42

    Verse 8.

    17:43-17:48

You probably all knew verse 8 going into this, right? We've all heard this verse, maybe you memorized it, maybe you quoted it.

    17:49-17:54

"Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good." I love that verse, because that verse is an invitation.

    17:55-18:00

"Taste and see that the Lord is good." Can I tell you about a day that changed my life forever?

    18:03-18:05

You're like, "Oh, you're going to tell us your testimony?" No.

    18:06-18:14

That changed my life forever, but this is, it's not as great as that day, but it's pretty far up there as far as days go.

    18:15-18:20

But I remember growing up, it just wasn't part of our family culture.

    18:20-18:22

We just typically never had Chinese food growing up, right?

    18:23-18:24

We just, we never had it.

    18:24-18:27

And I remember, I can't remember the context where or who.

    18:28-18:30

I think it was on break at work.

    18:30-18:33

I can't remember, and I'm gonna tell you why here.

    18:33-18:37

When you hear what happened, everything else just sort of fades away except this one thing.

    18:38-18:47

Okay, so I just remember somebody said, hey, would you like a bite of General Tso's chicken?

    18:48-18:50

And again, I've never had Chinese food.

    18:50-18:51

I'm like, yeah, I don't eat Chinese food.

    18:51-18:53

I never had it, but I'm like, I don't eat Chinese food.

    18:53-18:56

And they're like, oh, dude, you've got to try this.

    18:57-19:01

Like, no, thanks, I'm not great on trying new things.

    19:01-19:04

And, dude, you've got to try this.

    19:04-19:06

    "Nah, I'm not really interested.

    19:06-19:26

"You gotta try this." Put it on the fork, had it to my mouth, "You got to try this." And then finally, just to get the person off my back, like, "All right, I'll try it." And I remember I put it in my mouth and like rainbows exploded from my face.

    19:29-19:31

    That moment changed my life.

    19:34-19:36

Now those of you that have tried that, am I exaggerating?

    19:38-19:39

    No, right Jack?

    19:39-19:42

I see Jack's back there like, he ain't lying.

    19:44-19:49

See the point was, there was somebody that had tried that and experienced it and loved it so much.

    19:49-19:52

They insisted that I try General Tso's chicken.

    19:53-19:54

They're like, dude, you don't know what you're missing.

    19:55-19:58

They insisted to the point that they practically shoved it in my mouth.

    20:01-20:13

And I mean, if we can make such a spectacle over something like that, and it's good, but for those of you that have tasted and seen that the Lord is good, shouldn't you be a little more insistent that other people try it?

    20:13-20:15

Look, you gotta know Jesus Christ.

    20:16-20:17

    You gotta know Him.

    20:17-20:18

    You gotta know Him.

    20:18-20:24

I was so lost, and I was so guilty, and I was so, my life was a mess.

    20:24-20:26

And do you know what He did for me?

    20:26-20:27

Do you know how He changed me?

    20:27-20:30

Do you know the purpose that He has given my life?

    20:30-20:31

    You gotta try Him.

    20:31-20:32

    You gotta come to church.

    20:32-20:33

You gotta come to my small group.

    20:33-20:40

We should be just as insistent as whoever that saint was that made me try General Tso's chicken.

    20:41-20:50

That's why the best evangelists and worshippers are the ones who are always mindful of what God is doing and has done in their lives.

    20:51-20:56

That's why I have no problem inviting people to this church.

    20:56-20:57

    I have no problem.

    20:58-21:01

And not because it's my job at all.

    21:03-21:05

It's because of the ways I see God at work here.

    21:07-21:10

The way I see God moving in the lives of people and families.

    21:11-21:13

The way I see God blessing people here.

    21:15-21:26

The thought never crosses my mind that someone would take me up on an invitation to come, and they would leave here on a Sunday morning disappointed, because when God moves, no one is disappointed.

    21:29-21:30

And that compels me to worship Him.

    21:31-21:34

    He doesn't disappoint. Not ever.

    21:35-21:37

Number two, why I'm compelled to worship.

    21:39-21:40

Because God has taught me how to live.

    21:42-21:43

    Look at verses 11-16.

    21:45-21:56

He says, "Come, O children, listen to Me. I will teach you the fear of the Lord." What man is there who desires life and loves many days that he may see good?

    21:57-22:00

That's a rhetorical question, by the way. It's pretty obvious, right?

    22:00-22:15

He's like, "Do you know anybody that wants to live a good, long, happy life?" Like, "Do you mean everybody that ever lived?" "Yes." He says, "Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.

    22:15-22:19

Turn away from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.

    22:20-22:25

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and His ears toward their cry.

    22:25-22:31

The face of the Lord is against those who do evil to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

    22:33-22:34

God's taught me how to live.

    22:36-22:38

You know, sin is such an interesting thing.

    22:39-22:46

We crave our sins so badly, and it always, ultimately makes us miserable.

    22:48-22:49

    Such a crazy thing.

    22:51-22:56

Just as we said God always satisfies, Sin never has. You realize that?

    22:57-23:10

Never in the history of the world has somebody lived in sin and thought, "Yeah, that works. That's fulfilling. That's making me happy." And people foolishly think of the Word of God as restrictive.

    23:12-23:16

People laugh at us church people, because the Word of God is so restrictive.

    23:16-23:18

And I've heard it so many times it makes me sick.

    23:19-23:28

People are like, "Oh, God doesn't want me to have fun. Is that it?" You know, you believe in the Bible, "Yeah, God just doesn't want us to have any fun." Well, let me ask you, is it really fun?

    23:30-23:32

I want you to look at the porn addict.

    23:33-23:37

Driven by lust, and driven to constant guilt. Is that fun?

    23:39-23:41

Sit down with that guy and get him to be honest with you.

    23:41-23:43

Is your sin fun? How's that working out for you?

    23:45-23:46

    He's miserable.

    23:47-23:49

Verse 14 tells us to pursue peace.

    23:50-23:51

    Look at the contentious person.

    23:53-23:56

You know a contentious person just wants to fight with everybody about everything?

    23:58-24:02

And then they don't have any friends because nobody wants to be around somebody like that.

    24:02-24:03

    And they feel lonely.

    24:04-24:08

"I just don't feel close to anybody. I don't feel like I have a real friend in the world." Is that fun?

    24:09-24:11

Is it fun to fight with everybody? Is that fun?

    24:13-24:14

Oh, we could go on and on.

    24:14-24:18

    What about the lazy person?

    24:18-24:19

    Driven to comfort.

    24:22-24:24

Easy path of least resistance every time.

    24:24-24:25

    What's comfortable for me?

    24:26-24:27

    What's easiest for me?

    24:27-24:29

    And then they're feeling unfulfilled.

    24:29-24:31

I just don't feel like I have any purpose in life.

    24:31-24:33

I don't feel like God's using me for anything in life.

    24:33-24:35

I just wonder all the time, why am I here?

    24:35-24:36

    Why am I here?

    24:36-24:37

    Is your laziness fun?

    24:37-24:38

Is that working out for you?

    24:41-24:42

    Take the drunk person.

    24:44-24:45

    Driven to party, right?

    24:46-24:50

Life is a beer commercial and it's so fun, it's so fun, it's so fun.

    24:53-24:54

Do you know what's not fun is addiction.

    24:56-25:04

You know what's not fun is needing to be in rehab, whether it's drinking or drugs or whatever.

    25:06-25:08

That's why God calls us to repent.

    25:09-25:10

Let's get that on the table now.

    25:11-25:14

God calls you to repent for one simple reason.

    25:14-25:15

    It's because He loves you.

    25:17-25:24

And when God tells you to turn from your sin, as we saw in this passage here, when God tells you to turn from your sin, what He's saying is, "Look, stop destroying yourself.

    25:26-25:28

    Stop living in misery.

    25:28-25:34

Turn to Me." And I can tell you, I tried it my way.

    25:36-25:37

    And I was completely miserable.

    25:38-25:41

But living God's way has maximized my joy.

    25:42-25:52

That's why God's Word is a delight, as we talked about last week, and that's why I'm compelled to worship Him.

    25:54-25:55

Because He's taught me how to live.

    25:56-26:00

Thirdly, God has comforted me through difficult times.

    26:01-26:03

God has comforted me through difficult times.

    26:03-26:04

    Look at verses 17-20.

    26:05-26:07

When the righteous cry for help.

    26:08-26:10

Look at that, right on time, cue the cry.

    26:11-26:13

right there in the passage. You see that?

    26:14-26:14

    Thank you.

    26:15-26:20

"When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.

    26:21-26:26

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

    26:28-26:32

Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers Him out of them all.

    26:33-26:40

He keeps all His bones, not one of them is broken." Am I compelled to worship?

    26:41-26:43

Because God has comforted me through difficult times.

    26:43-26:48

God doesn't always eliminate problems, but He has promised to sustain us and strengthen us through them.

    26:50-27:04

And that's why the sorrowful, if you're here today and you're going through a hard time, you're going through a rough patch, whether it's lasted a week or whether it's lasted 20 years, the sorrowful get to know God in a special way.

    27:07-27:08

That's one of the great things about trials.

    27:09-27:13

Is you get to experience God in a way that you wouldn't otherwise.

    27:16-27:22

It's when we realize that we're hopeless sinners, that we get to experience the awesomeness of God's forgiveness.

    27:23-27:29

It's when we are in need that we get to experience the awesomeness of God's provision.

    27:30-27:38

And in this passage here, verse 18, it's when we are brokenhearted and crushed We get to experience God's compassion and comfort.

    27:38-27:41

We get to know Him as a loving Father.

    27:43-27:58

And that's why these experiences that I've gone through, these difficult times that I've gone through, have compelled me to worship Him.

    27:59-28:03

And finally, God has taken away my guilt.

    28:04-28:06

Am I compelled to worship Him?

    28:07-28:08

Because God has taken away my guilt.

    28:10-28:16

This alone would be more than enough reason to worship Him for eternity.

    28:16-28:17

    Look at verse 21.

    28:18-28:23

"Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned." Look at this last verse.

    28:24-28:32

"The Lord redeems the life of His servants." None of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

    28:34-28:35

    the fear of judgment.

    28:37-28:45

For all of the sinful, selfish, stupid things that I've done because of Jesus Christ, there's no condemnation, there's no shame, there's no guilt.

    28:45-28:46

    I'm forgiven.

    28:47-28:47

    And I'm free.

    28:49-28:50

And I couldn't do it myself.

    28:52-28:54

    Not by my good works.

    28:54-28:55

    Not by my religion.

    28:55-28:59

I'm going to try really hard to not sin anymore.

    29:01-29:03

It's only when I take refuge in Him.

    29:04-29:10

It's only when I take refuge in Him that I'm free from the guilt of my sin.

    29:11-29:17

And I love that he says, "None of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned." That means this is for everyone.

    29:19-29:21

So if you're sitting here today, it doesn't matter what you've done.

    29:23-29:28

God has provided forgiveness in Jesus Christ.

    29:28-29:55

And you know, when I think on that day, as we just sung earlier, on that day when it's my turn to leave the earth, and I think on that day, I'm going to be granted access to eternal paradise with God because of the blood of Jesus Christ.

    29:57-29:59

When I think about that day, do you know what that does for me now?

    30:01-30:02

    That compels me to worship.

    30:04-30:06

As we close, I'd like the worship team to make their way forward.

    30:09-30:10

Mike Martin, I'd like you to come forward.

    30:10-30:12

I want to use you for an illustration.

    30:12-30:12

    Can I do that?

    30:13-30:14

I'm not going to embarrass you, I promise.

    30:15-30:16

    Come on up here.

    30:18-30:21

I just want you, as we close here and as we're about to sing, I want you to imagine.

    30:23-30:25

We're going to let Mike symbolize the man here.

    30:25-30:27

But I want you to imagine with me, please.

    30:28-30:28

    Use your imaginations.

    30:30-30:36

I want you to imagine that you meet a man in this church, and we're going to call him the fatherly type.

    30:37-30:42

You met this man in the church, and you became friends with this man by coming to this church and getting to know this man.

    30:42-30:51

And let's say in our scenario here, over the course of five years, you have really got to know and love and appreciate this man.

    30:53-30:54

That he wasn't just another churchgoer.

    30:54-30:56

this man got invested in your life.

    30:58-31:02

I want you to imagine that this man helped disciple you.

    31:04-31:10

That there were times this man, he'd come to small group, and he'd open the Bible, and he'd share some things that the Lord had taught him.

    31:11-31:16

And over the course of the five years, this man, there were times that he provided for you.

    31:17-31:22

Oh, do you remember that time that you had that sudden problem in your house?

    31:22-31:26

You had a pipe broke, and you didn't have the money to fix it, and he gave you the money to fix it.

    31:27-31:37

Or that time that your car broke down and you didn't have the money for the repairs and he had a mechanic buddy and he made sure that your car got fixed.

    31:37-31:42

These kinds of things seem to happen a lot over the years that he helped provide for you.

    31:43-31:54

Or do you remember that time in church that somebody else in the church really offended you and you were really upset with them and you were thinking about leaving the church because you were so offended and you were never gonna forgive.

    31:54-32:01

And you remember, this was the man who sat down with the two of you and he prayed with you and he helped you reconcile the relationship.

    32:02-32:04

    Oh, he was the reconciler.

    32:06-32:12

Do you remember the time that your grandfather died and who was the first person to show up at your house?

    32:13-32:14

    But your buddy from church.

    32:15-32:18

He was there with you, with your family, praying.

    32:18-32:23

He showed up at the funeral and he just put his arm around you and comforted you.

    32:24-32:25

    during that time.

    32:27-32:33

All over the course of those five years, there were so many times that you called him for advice.

    32:34-32:57

Whether it's, "Hey, can you help me figure out "how to fix this plumbing issue I'm having?" Or, "Hey, can you, my kid's going through this phase, "can you tell me how to figure out how to, "what should I say to my kid that's going through this?" Or, "I just had this argument with my wife "and she's really mad at me." And there's been so many times that you've called him and he's just given you fatherly advice.

    32:58-33:05

Anytime, he just dropped what he was doing and he made you numero uno.

    33:07-33:11

I want you to imagine you show up on a Sunday and he's brought up front just like he is here.

    33:13-33:20

And I get up beside this, who's become one of your best friends on the planet.

    33:20-33:23

I get up beside him and I say, "Hey, I got some sad news.

    33:23-33:27

Due to sudden circumstances, Mike has to move.

    33:29-33:32

And because of the circumstances, he's leaving today after church.

    33:32-33:34

He's packing up and he's leaving.

    33:35-33:38

And he's been so influential in so many people.

    33:39-33:45

Is there anybody here that would like to say something to Mike?" Now, I want you to think about that.

    33:45-33:47

Just hit pause here for a second.

    33:50-34:02

When you think back of the five years that this man has ministered to you and all the ways that he's loved you and taken care of you, and I say, "Does anybody have anything they'd like to say?" Would you have something to say?

    34:04-34:07

Would you have anything that you would like to say to this man?

    34:08-34:16

I would suggest that the gratitude and the honor would passionately pour out.

    34:17-34:24

You would have so much to say to Him because of the experience that you've had with Him.

    34:24-34:28

You've received so much blessing from this guy over the course of five years.

    34:29-34:30

You're like, "Yeah, I've got to say some things.

    34:31-34:36

I've got to tell him how much I appreciated all the stuff that you've done for me.

    34:36-34:37

And I've got to tell everybody else.

    34:37-34:44

This guy was a friend to me when I felt like I didn't have a friend in the world." It would just be pouring out, wouldn't it?

    34:45-34:46

Thank you, Mike. You can have a seat.

    34:48-35:01

You see, I want to tell you we're here today because we want to say some things to someone far greater than our hypothetical father figure.

    35:03-35:10

We're here today because we want to say some things to God.

    35:11-35:13

So if you are born again, do you know what that means?

    35:13-35:21

That means Jesus died on the cross in your place so that you could be forgiven of everything wrong that you've ever done or ever will do.

    35:24-35:26

If you were born again, it means you are saved from eternal hell.

    35:28-35:32

You're never going to experience a half a second of God's judgment.

    35:34-35:37

If you are born again, that means you've been given the promise of heaven.

    35:37-35:46

That means he encourages you and guides you with wisdom, through life, through family, through work, in His Word.

    35:49-35:51

He provides every single thing that you need.

    35:51-35:57

He comforts you and sustains you through the worst trials of your life, never leaving or forsaking you.

    36:00-36:01

His love for you is limitless.

    36:03-36:10

Do you realize when you're at your very best, or you're at your very worst, His love for you is exactly the same.

    36:12-36:26

So just like we brought hypothetical father figure up and said, "Would anybody have something they'd like to say to Him?" I want you to think about Jesus Christ and everything He's done for you, and everything He will do for you, because He ain't leaving.

    36:27-36:39

And I want to ask you the same question, "Is there anybody here that has anything they would like to say to Jesus Christ?" Well, I'd like you to stand, and we're going to give you the opportunity to do that right now.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Psalm 34 (stand and read aloud; sing a favorite hymn as a group if compelled)

  1. How would you define "worship" to a child? How would you explain to that child the purpose of worship in music at the church?

  2. What are the nuances in the synonyms for worship in Psalm 34:1-3?

    - bless:

    - praise:

    - boast:

    - magnify:

    - exalt:

  3. What would you say to someone who says to you, "I tried trusting God once, and He disappointed me." How can we reconcile this statement with Psalm 34:10?

  4. In church, does the music prepare you for the sermon, or does the sermon help make you a better worshiper? (Note to discussion leader: My <Jeff’s> opinion is the latter, but this isn’t really a dogmatic "right or wrong" issue. It is just meant to think through why we do what we do at HBC.)

  5. What was your big "take-away" from this passage / message?

  6. Bonus: What is your favorite worship song / hymn? What is meaningful to you about that song?

Breakout Questions:

How would you rate yourself as a worshiper? From this text / message, how will you seek to become a more passionate worshiper?

  • 00:42-00:50

We're starting a series today, four weeks, called Harvest DNA, and this was at the request of our elders.

    00:51-00:57

I'm seeing so many wonderful newer faces in our church and people getting involved in ministry.

    00:58-01:03

The elders had asked that I do a message series on what kind of a church are we.

    01:03-01:14

So we're going to be exploring our DNA as a church and sort of pulling the curtain back on why we do what we do at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    01:14-01:21

So if you're a first-time visitor, this is a great time to jump on board, get a full view of who we are and what we're doing.

    01:22-01:41

But many, many, many, many years ago, I was driving from Ohio back home, and it was the middle of the night, it was about three in the morning, and I was on 528 somewhere between Evans City and 19, and there was a car on my bumper.

    01:42-01:51

Like again, three in the morning, I'm exhausted, I've been driving all night, there was a car in my bumper, and I'm thinking, you know what, I'm just gonna slow down and let 'em pass.

    01:52-01:54

So I slowed down, they weren't passing.

    01:54-01:59

I slowed down almost to a crawl and they weren't passing.

    01:59-02:00

I'm like, well, maybe I'll speed up a little bit.

    02:01-02:07

And no, on my tail, high beams could not get rid of this person.

    02:07-02:35

all I could think of was somebody's looking for trouble and I'll be honest with you I've been driving all night it's 3 in the morning I'm not in the mood to get engaged in any trouble. Kids I don't encourage this. How's that for a disclaimer? Never mind I don't want to tell this story. Okay um I'm like I'm not looking for trouble, pedal to the metal.

    02:36-02:40

And I went as fast as a Chevy Cavalier could go.

    02:41-02:43

I hit almost 40 miles per hour.

    02:47-02:51

I'm like, nobody's gonna be bothering me.

    02:52-02:52

    Well, you know what?

    02:52-02:53

That car did catch up with me.

    02:53-03:00

And this time it had blue and red lights flashing on the roof of the car.

    03:02-03:04

So I thought that person is not going to get me.

    03:04-03:05

    That person got me.

    03:08-03:10

I'll tell you the rest of the story later.

    03:10-03:13

    But what made the difference?

    03:13-03:21

What made the difference between this car that was following me and the car with the blue and the red lights that were behind me?

    03:21-03:22

    What made the difference?

    03:22-03:25

The difference is something called authority.

    03:27-03:29

We're gonna talk about authority today.

    03:31-03:41

Authority is the power or right to give orders, to make decisions, and to enforce obedience.

    03:42-03:42

    That's what authority is.

    03:43-03:51

I had zero intention of engaging with the person behind me until I saw that this was a person of authority.

    03:54-04:01

And our source of authority at Harvest Bible Chapel, this is where this whole series starts And this is where it ends.

    04:01-04:05

Our source of authority at Harvest Bible Chapel is the Bible.

    04:06-04:09

That's why it is our middle name, Harvest Bible Chapel.

    04:09-04:12

This is our source of authority.

    04:13-04:19

This is the book that God wrote and everything we do comes from our view of Scripture.

    04:21-04:25

So the question we're going to look at today, how do we go after that at Harvest Bible Chapel?

    04:26-04:27

    Now here's another disclaimer.

    04:29-04:37

In talking about what we do at Harvest, I am not condemning or criticizing how other pastors and other churches do it.

    04:37-04:37

    Okay?

    04:38-04:39

    Everybody's got their thing.

    04:41-04:45

And I'm not really concerned with what other churches are doing, I'm concerned with what this church is doing.

    04:47-04:59

Because at Harvest Bible Chapel we have an unyielding conviction to know God through His Word by expository preaching.

    05:01-05:09

Teaching and preaching the Word of God, verse by verse, drawing the truth from the text.

    05:10-05:13

So I want you to jot some things down in your outline.

    05:13-05:17

These are four reasons that we are committed to expository preaching.

    05:19-05:28

You know, for the person that might be sitting here saying, "It doesn't really matter, preaching style or how you preach, aren't all sermons the same?" No, they are not.

    05:31-05:36

We are committed to verse by verse, expository, text gives us the meaning.

    05:36-05:38

    That's what we're committed to.

    05:39-05:47

I want to explain why. I could give you probably fifty reasons but I just want to give you four today.

    05:47-05:52

Four reasons we're committed to Expository Preaching. Number one is this, it determines the sermons.

    05:54-05:56

    It determines the sermons.

    05:58-06:07

Every year I go away for a week and just work on the preaching calendar. My sermons are planned out a year ahead of time.

    06:08-06:11

And then I bring that preaching calendar to our elders for approval.

    06:12-06:16

And it sort of shows, as a church, what direction we are heading.

    06:18-06:24

The sermons are already determined, not by what I feel like preaching, but what is in the text.

    06:25-06:28

And if you've been with us, we've been going through the Book of Acts.

    06:28-06:37

Our elders went a three-year through the Book of Acts for the purpose of understanding what it means to receive God's power by the Holy Spirit to be witnesses.

    06:38-06:43

So I broke the book of Acts down for a three-year plan.

    06:44-06:45

    Determines the sermons.

    06:46-06:47

A couple other things under that.

    06:49-06:51

Letting the Word determine the sermons.

    06:52-06:56

Preaching verse by verse keeps me from just preaching on my favorite things.

    06:57-07:00

We talked about this last week, didn't we, Mike, with Q&A day.

    07:02-07:08

If I just picked what I wanted to preach on, you'd probably only get like maybe four different sermons, right?

    07:09-07:15

Like, I'll have a sermon on grace, I'll have a sermon on mercy, I'll have a sermon on love, I'll have a sermon on loving your wife or whatever.

    07:18-07:22

And those are all important things, but they're not everything that the Bible has to say.

    07:24-07:28

The other side of that coin is preaching verse by verse makes me preach on things I would otherwise avoid.

    07:31-07:38

You see, when we walk through the Bible, we take the subjects as they come up, and we address them.

    07:40-07:46

I don't really enjoy talking about hell, or judgment, or sin.

    07:47-07:53

And I wouldn't go after those themes if I just preached on my weekly preferences.

    07:55-07:57

But verse by verse preaching forces us to deal with them.

    07:58-08:02

And God has them in His Word because He wants them dealt with.

    08:03-08:07

So number one, reasons we're committed to expository preaching, it determines the sermons.

    08:07-08:10

Number two, it lets the Word speak for itself.

    08:13-08:20

You see, preaching verse by verse, going through the Bible, it makes me avoid taking things out of context.

    08:20-08:26

It makes me avoid misrepresenting God by misunderstanding what the Word actually says.

    08:28-08:33

It's ripping a passage out of its context and preaching on it.

    08:35-08:50

A lot of us in this room could probably give stories of disastrous sermons that you've heard where the preacher has taken a verse out of its context and just like run with it, but when you see that verse in the context of the book, it says nothing about what they're talking about.

    08:53-09:03

Or the major crime, this is the major crime, using the Bible to support my thoughts.

    09:05-09:09

This is what a lot of quote unquote sermons are.

    09:09-09:34

The preacher gets up and says, "Okay, I'm going to talk to you about," you know, pick a subject, you know, "being a friendly co-worker," or whatever, "I'm going to talk to you about being a friendly coworker and we have a few quotes from Maya Angelou or whatever, and then we tell a little anecdote about back when I was in college and I worked at so-and-so and I learned how to be a nice coworker.

    09:34-09:40

And then we sprinkle a couple of Bible verses on that and then we call it a sermon.

    09:41-09:47

Let's draw a proverb here or maybe a do unto others thing that Jesus said there.

    09:47-09:51

And people think, "Well, that's a sermon because he used the Bible." You didn't use the Bible.

    09:51-09:52

    You weren't preaching the Bible.

    09:54-10:02

You were just sort of allowing the Bible to somewhat authenticate this message you had.

    10:02-10:03

    That's not a sermon.

    10:04-10:05

    That is not a sermon.

    10:07-10:10

We need to let the Word of God speak for itself.

    10:11-10:17

As a friend of mine has said many times, he said, "The Bible is like a lion." He said, "You don't defend a lion.

    10:19-10:25

You let a lion out of his cage and he's going to defend himself." And that's how we at Harvest Bible Chapel view the Word of God.

    10:26-10:31

We'll just open the Word, proclaim the Word, and we'll let the Word of God defend itself.

    10:33-10:37

So number three, it gives us confidence to read the Bible ourselves.

    10:39-10:43

Preaching verse by verse helps people become better Bible students for themselves.

    10:45-10:52

You see, if the sermon is from Acts, you see, here's how a lot of sermons go.

    10:52-11:00

Like, okay, we're going to preach from the book of Acts, and I'll read like a couple of verses, but then I'll spend 30 minutes cross-referencing.

    11:01-11:20

You know, like we're reading this passage in Acts, and it's just like what Moses said in Exodus chapter 23, and it's like what the prophet said in Jeremiah chapter 14, and oh "Oh yeah, the psalmist said this in Psalm 15, and we are all over the Bible." And that's not actually preaching the book of Acts.

    11:24-11:25

    And there's a reason I don't do that.

    11:26-11:28

    I cross-reference very rarely.

    11:29-11:34

Only when in my mind it's absolutely necessary to support a point.

    11:34-11:56

But at Harvest, when we open the Bible, we're not likely to tell you to jump around in your Bible. Okay, we're going to start here, but now I want you to turn here, now I want you to turn here, now I want you to turn here. Do you know why we don't do that? Do you know why? Do you know why? Because people don't read the Bible like that. Is that how you read the Bible when you sit down at home? Like we're going to have a flipping marathon.

    11:58-12:09

Nobody reads a Bible like that. But you see the other problem with that, okay, so the guy comes to church, maybe he's a new believer, just cracked the spine on the Bible for the the first time we have people like that here.

    12:10-12:13

And God bless you, seeking the Lord, and I wanna help you with that.

    12:14-12:17

But we have people that crack the spine on the Bible for the first time.

    12:17-12:27

They're like, "Okay, I wanna learn about the Bible." And I open up the book of Acts, and all of a sudden I'm talking about Exodus, and Psalms, and Jeremiah, and back in Matthew, chapter whatever.

    12:28-12:31

And that guy's gonna be sitting there going, "Well, I can't read the Bible.

    12:32-12:36

"How in the world does Jeff know "about all these magical little cross-references places?

    12:36-12:37

    "I can't read the Bible.

    12:37-12:38

Well, I couldn't find those verses.

    12:39-12:44

I better just let Jeff explain the Bible to me because I don't know how to do that.

    12:45-12:47

You don't need to know how to do that.

    12:49-12:52

The message, let's take the book of Acts, for example.

    12:53-12:57

The message of the book of Acts is in what book?

    12:58-12:59

    Acts, right?

    12:59-13:01

The message of Ephesians is where?

    13:02-13:03

    In Ephesians, right?

    13:03-13:04

You guys are getting good at this.

    13:04-13:06

The message of the gospel of John is where?

    13:07-13:08

    The gospel of John, right?

    13:09-13:10

You're like, okay, we get the point.

    13:12-13:20

We stay in one chunk of text, verse by verse, and that's what gives people confidence to read the Bible for themselves.

    13:21-13:27

You see, I want you to go home and open up your Bible and look at the passage that we just covered in church.

    13:28-13:34

I want you to look at that and go, do you realize all Jeff did was talk about what's in this passage?

    13:34-13:34

You realize that's all he did?

    13:36-13:37

    I could do that.

    13:38-13:40

I don't know what we're paying him for.

    13:40-13:46

Look, I got kids to feed, but why would, I could totally do what he does.

    13:46-13:50

All he did was go through this and explain what it says.

    13:50-13:51

    I could totally do that.

    13:51-13:54

I could, I could certainly read this for myself.

    13:55-13:56

Yeah, that's what I want you to do.

    13:57-14:00

I want you to go home and get excited about reading this for yourself.

    14:02-14:04

That's why we preach the way that we do.

    14:05-14:06

    At Harvest Bible Chapel.

    14:06-14:06

    Number four.

    14:08-14:10

Why do I believe in expository preaching?

    14:12-14:13

This is probably the biggest reason.

    14:14-14:16

    It supernaturally transforms people.

    14:17-14:19

You see, this is what we're going after.

    14:20-14:21

    As a church.

    14:22-14:24

    God transforming me.

    14:25-14:26

    God transforming us.

    14:27-14:31

And God's Word claims to do just that.

    14:34-14:49

For example, Isaiah 55 verses 10 and 11 says, "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater," look at this, "so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.

    14:50-15:04

It shall not return to be empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and shall "I shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it." God's Word always accomplishes God's purposes every single time, according to God, 100%.

    15:05-15:08

It always accomplishes the purposes for which He sends it out.

    15:09-15:14

Tell me something else that exists anywhere on the earth that works perfectly 100% of the time.

    15:16-15:18

There's nothing but the Word of God.

    15:18-15:25

Romans 10.17 says, "So faith comes from hearing, through the Word of Christ.

    15:25-15:27

Do you want faith? Do you want to grow in your faith?

    15:27-15:28

Do you want your faith to deepen?

    15:30-15:36

The Bible says your faith comes from the Word of Christ.

    15:36-15:37

    The Word of God.

    15:39-16:07

2 Corinthians 3.18 says, "And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, for this comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." You look at the context of that passage, he's talking about the transforming power when the Spirit of God is at work with the Word of God.

    16:07-16:08

    That's what changes people.

    16:09-16:11

And that's why we're committed to expository preaching.

    16:13-16:15

    I can't change anyone.

    16:16-16:24

I can't come up with a creative or clever enough two minute TED talk that's going to transform your life.

    16:24-16:25

    I can't do it.

    16:26-16:26

I don't have that in me.

    16:27-16:29

Nobody does, but this book does.

    16:30-16:33

God's Holy Spirit has chosen to work with the Word of God.

    16:34-16:35

    That's how He works.

    16:37-16:38

So the question is, does it work?

    16:39-16:45

With these verses you just read, Pastor Jeff, is that really what happens when we engage God's Word?

    16:46-16:51

this past week, Ben Murphy actually sent me these stats.

    16:53-17:00

And I said, "I'm totally using them in my sermon." The Bible's Center for Bible Engagement.

    17:01-17:02

I didn't even know such a thing existed.

    17:02-17:07

But they did a study of people who read the Bible just four days a week.

    17:08-17:09

    And here's what they found.

    17:10-17:15

If you read a Bible just four days a week, you're 57% less likely to get drunk.

    17:16-17:20

You're 68% less likely to have sex outside of marriage.

    17:20-17:24

You're 61% less likely to engage in pornography.

    17:25-17:29

You're 74% less likely to engage in gambling.

    17:31-17:34

Look at these last three because the numbers are going to jump.

    17:34-17:38

You're 228% more likely to share your faith with others.

    17:40-17:44

You're 231% more likely to disciple others.

    17:47-17:51

You're 407% more likely to memorize Scripture.

    17:54-17:55

    What does all that mean?

    17:55-17:57

What that means is the Word of God works.

    17:58-18:00

    The Word of God works.

    18:01-18:03

    The statistics back that up.

    18:04-18:09

But I'll tell you what, I was sold on the Word of God even before Murph sent me these statistics because that's been my experience.

    18:10-18:11

    The Word of God works.

    18:12-18:14

The Word of God transforms people's lives.

    18:15-18:18

And that's why we are committed to expository preaching.

    18:21-18:23

Alright, that's all I was going to talk about today.

    18:25-18:35

But then I thought, there are going to be people that are like, "But Pastor Jeff, you just taught me that that wasn't a sermon." You're right.

    18:37-18:38

    Turn to Nehemiah 8.

    18:41-18:42

    That was the introduction, right?

    18:43-18:45

    Nehemiah chapter 8.

    18:46-18:47

That was the introduction, here's the sermon.

    18:50-18:56

Trying to find it. The book of Psalms is like right in the middle of your Bible and it's a couple books before Psalms.

    18:59-19:00

    Nehemiah chapter 8.

    19:01-19:07

While you're turning there, I'll give you a little background what's happening in Israel's history at this point.

    19:09-19:13

The book of Nehemiah, Israel, was returning to Jerusalem after the exile.

    19:14-19:16

Remember we talked about this way back in Bible 101.

    19:17-19:29

But Israel, because of her persistent sin, God sent judgment in the form of the Assyrians, in the form of the Babylonians, but God allowed Israel to return back to her land under the Persians, the Medo-Persians.

    19:30-19:41

And Nehemiah, under his leadership, They went back for the purpose of rebuilding the wall around Jerusalem.

    19:44-19:55

Remember that story, Nehemiah was like, "We're going to build a wall, and the Persians are going to pay for it." That might not be in your translation.

    20:00-20:03

that they were going to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem.

    20:05-20:12

And more important than building the wall, was building the people.

    20:14-20:18

And church, before we look at this, boy, what a message we can learn from Nehemiah.

    20:18-20:20

More important than building the wall was building the people.

    20:22-20:27

More important than this address, you know, the Lord has so blessed us.

    20:27-20:30

Mark and I, we were just talking about this before service, weren't we?

    20:30-20:44

how the Lord has blessed us, taking us from running the school and all of the set up and tear down, and the Lord's provided this place, and now the new space up there that has been renovated and work is being done, and the Lord has been so good to us.

    20:46-20:54

And I am so thankful to God for what He has provided so that our ministry can grow and expand and we can do a better job making disciples.

    20:55-21:00

But you know, so much more important than this space, these rooms.

    21:00-21:08

So much more important than building this stuff is building you.

    21:10-21:12

Because I'll be honest with you, none of this stuff matters.

    21:12-21:15

It doesn't matter how nice the stuff is.

    21:17-21:22

It doesn't matter if you're not growing as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

    21:24-21:26

None of this matters if people aren't getting saved here.

    21:27-21:31

None of this matters if marriages aren't being healed here.

    21:32-21:36

None of this matters if people aren't being equipped to be ministers here.

    21:38-21:40

So there's a definite message here from Nehemiah.

    21:41-21:48

Yeah, building of the stuff, important, but by far secondary to the importance of building the people.

    21:48-21:50

That's what we see in Nehemiah 8.

    21:52-21:53

I want you to jot some things down in your outline.

    21:55-21:58

We're going to talk about God's Word being effective in your life.

    22:01-22:04

There are some things that we can do to maximize that.

    22:05-22:09

See, God's Word is effective not sitting on the shelf.

    22:10-22:13

God's Word is effective not left in the pocket of the seat.

    22:14-22:18

God's Word is not effective just sticking it under your pillow at night.

    22:18-22:19

I've heard of people doing that.

    22:19-22:19

Have you ever heard of that?

    22:20-22:28

People putting the Bible under their pillow at night thinking that it's going to like through some kind of Holy Spirit osmosis, it's going to bless them.

    22:28-22:30

That's not how the Word of God works.

    22:33-22:38

For the Word of God to be effective, for God's Word to be effective, we're gonna see four things here from Nehemiah 8.

    22:40-22:43

First of all, letter A, you have to want it.

    22:44-22:49

For God's Word to be effective in your life, it has to start here, you have to want it.

    22:50-22:51

Look at the first two verses.

    22:53-23:01

It says, "And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the water gate." They estimate there are about 50,000 people here, okay?

    23:02-23:08

It says, "And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel.

    23:08-23:34

So Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women and all who can understand what they heard." Stop there, you have to notice The thing that really stands out in this passage is in verse one, it says, "They," the people, "They told Ezra to bring the book out." Did you see that?

    23:35-23:36

    They asked for the Word.

    23:37-23:47

It wasn't like Ezra showed up, was like, "Listen, people, we're having church." They're like, "All right." And they sort of like, "We'll endure.

    23:47-23:49

Are we gonna do the religious thing?

    23:51-23:53

He didn't initiate it, the people did.

    23:53-23:57

They said, "Please, would you give us the word of God?

    23:58-24:04

Please, please give us the word." You see, they didn't have access to it like we do.

    24:07-24:09

All right, you pack your bags, we're going on a guilt trip.

    24:09-24:10

How many Bibles do you have?

    24:11-24:16

Like in those days, usually just the men could hear the reading in the temple.

    24:16-24:27

this was a really unique circumstance because the women and children were also present, but they didn't have copies of these on their shelves.

    24:29-24:39

They didn't have personal libraries full of books and commentaries on their shelves at home. Like, "Wait, how many Bibles do you have?" Right? I'm the same way.

    24:39-24:53

I got shelves and drawers full. We have access, like, with the Internet? How many How many translations and different renderings of God's Word do we have available for us?

    24:55-24:59

See, they didn't have access to God's Word like we do.

    25:00-25:01

They didn't have family Christian stores.

    25:03-25:06

Actually, hang on a second, we don't have that anymore either.

    25:08-25:13

But notice it says in the text, it was on the first day of the seventh month.

    25:14-25:21

That was significant because according to their civil calendar, that was the new year.

    25:23-25:28

And I think we can make an obvious application, can't we?

    25:28-25:29

    We're celebrating the new year.

    25:29-25:34

How many of us feel this sense of it's a new year, the calendar's turned.

    25:34-25:43

Yeah, had a lot of rough stuff happen in 2017, but something about turning that calendar over to 2018 is like, "You know what? It's a new opportunity, right?

    25:44-25:47

We can start over. And it's going to be a better year this year.

    25:49-26:06

God does something better. His mercies are new every day." But you can get the sense in which people were anticipating, "New Year, please give us the Word of God." And I would just ask you, Harvest, can you share the longing that the Israelites had?

    26:09-26:11

This year God's Word is going to be my priority.

    26:11-26:15

You know I haven't been going after it as I should, and that's changing now.

    26:17-26:18

    Can you share that?

    26:22-26:25

Like, well Pastor Jeff, that sounds like a nice sentiment, but I'll be honest with you.

    26:26-26:28

I don't really have much of an appetite.

    26:29-26:31

Well, I've got some fantastic news for you.

    26:32-26:39

Because the more you read God's Word, the more you study God's Word, the more you hear God's word, the more you're going to want God's word.

    26:39-26:40

    It's an amazing thing.

    26:41-26:42

    Can somebody testify to that?

    26:43-26:46

The more you're in it, the more you want it.

    26:47-26:51

You know, I was trying to think, is there a way I can illustrate that?

    26:51-26:59

Is there something from my life that I'm like, "Yeah, I have a perfect illustration of that." Organic roasted seaweed snack.

    27:02-27:05

See, I bought it because it says winter harvest right here.

    27:05-27:05

    Like harvest.

    27:08-27:13

No, the reason I bought this was because my doctor recommended me doing some detoxing.

    27:14-27:15

I'm like, well, how do you do that?

    27:16-27:20

And he said, one way you can detox is to eat seaweed.

    27:21-27:22

    I'm like, really?

    27:23-27:27

So, and my wife will tell you, remember how it went the first time I tried this?

    27:28-27:28

    You remember?

    27:29-27:30

    So Erin's like, yummy, yummy.

    27:31-27:34

    So, anybody ever had this?

    27:35-27:36

    A couple of you have?

    27:36-27:37

    Do you like it?

    27:40-27:42

Okay, yeah, you probably have the same illustration, right?

    27:43-27:49

The first time I tried it, if you don't know what we're looking at here, it's little green sheets of cellophane.

    27:50-27:50

    [ Laughter ]

    27:54-27:55

    It's called a seaweed snack.

    27:58-27:59

    Like snack?

    27:59-28:00

    I can see through it.

    28:00-28:01

    (laughs)

    28:03-28:10

But Erin will tell you the first time I tried this, she's like, "Come on, try." I'm just like, I mean, I took like a hummingbird size bite.

    28:10-28:17

I was just like, oh, oh, oh, I'm rolling around on the ground like I'm on fire covered with snakes.

    28:17-28:19

I'm like, oh, this is disgusting.

    28:22-28:24

But then I, like, you know what?

    28:24-28:26

This is supposed to be good for me.

    28:29-28:30

So I'm gonna try a little more.

    28:30-28:32

And then I tried a little more.

    28:32-28:38

And now what I found, no joke, you're experienced in what I found is, if I open one of these, I finish it.

    28:39-28:46

I eat these things by the bag, just like handfuls stuffing these little sheets of cellophane.

    28:47-28:48

    I love them now.

    28:49-28:50

    I really do.

    28:51-28:55

The first time I tried it, not so much, but this is good for me.

    28:55-28:57

    Now, I love these things.

    29:01-29:04

For some people, you need to have that experience with the Word of God.

    29:04-29:09

To say, "Look, I haven't had much of an appetite for it." Does anybody want some, by the way?

    29:10-29:11

    It's really not fair.

    29:11-29:12

    Here, pass this around, Alex.

    29:13-29:14

It's not fair for me to have it and not share.

    29:15-29:16

    My mother taught me better.

    29:19-29:20

    Go ahead and try some.

    29:24-29:24

    There's...

    29:24-29:25

    What do you think?

    29:27-29:28

    It's an acquired taste.

    29:28-29:29

    It's an acquired taste, right.

    29:30-29:38

There's somebody visiting our church right now that's like, "I am never going back there." They were passing around seaweed, they're about to start handling snakes or something.

    29:41-29:50

Or there might be somebody that's like, "I'm going to that church every week, they handle seaweed." Anyways, God's Word, you have to want it.

    29:52-29:53

    You have to want it.

    29:56-30:00

And you'll find that once you try it, you're going to want more.

    30:02-30:07

So letter B, you have to be attentive to it.

    30:07-30:08

    Look at verse 3.

    30:09-30:13

It says, "And he read from it." Ezra reading from the law.

    30:13-30:35

"And he read from it, facing the square before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand, in the ears of If all the people were attentive to the book of the law, I love verse 3 because actually they would have been listening to God's word for about six hours.

    30:37-30:40

They would have been listening to God's word for about six hours.

    30:42-30:43

    Six hours.

    30:43-30:51

You're like, "Why do you keep saying that?" Because the next time you're tempted to complain that my sermon was too long, I want you to stand up next to Ezra's.

    30:53-30:54

    Six hours.

    30:56-30:59

The amazing thing was not that Ezra spoke for six hours.

    31:00-31:04

The amazing thing was the people were attentive to the Word of God for six hours.

    31:09-31:23

If you've ever flown anywhere, you know when you get on the airplane, and before you take off, you know, the flight attendant does that little, the speech and the thing with the seatbelt, right?

    31:23-31:24

You know what I'm talking about?

    31:25-31:31

You know, in the, you know, put, here's how you buckle your seatbelt and they show you as if there's somebody sitting on the plane that's never seen a seatbelt before.

    31:32-31:33

Oh, is that how that works?

    31:34-31:35

I should get those for my car.

    31:36-31:45

And they explain how the oxygen mask dropped down and, you know, put it over your face before you helped your child, you selfish parent.

    31:45-31:50

And, but they go through that speech, right?

    31:52-32:00

And while they're giving this speech, like if the plane crashes into the water, here are some things that you need to do.

    32:01-32:01

Some things you need to know.

    32:02-32:03

Your seat becomes a flotation device.

    32:03-32:13

I'm like, you should have like, your seat becomes a parachute or your seat becomes another plane, but it becomes a flotation device.

    32:14-32:20

But I'm always amazed that when they're giving this life and death speech, you look around, what are people doing?

    32:22-32:35

Settling in for their nap, reading SkyMall, doing a crossword puzzle or playing Sudoku on their phone.

    32:35-32:37

And I'm like, what does it matter with you people?

    32:38-32:41

She's telling us what to do if we crashed into the water and you're not paying attention.

    32:44-32:59

But could you imagine, like if you were on the plane and the plane was literally going down into the ocean, and the flight attendant at that point stands up and says, "Okay, I'm going to give this speech again." Do you think people would be flipping through the SkyMall?

    33:00-33:02

They would be hanging on every word.

    33:02-33:04

    "Tell me how this works.

    33:04-33:14

Tell me what I need to do." You see, when we stand and preach the Word of God, this is God speaking.

    33:15-33:18

Words of life, words of salvation.

    33:18-33:21

We should be hanging on every word that's in this book.

    33:22-33:25

This is the book that the Almighty Creator Sovereign wrote?

    33:27-33:29

You have to be attentive to it.

    33:30-33:32

Let her see you have to revere it.

    33:34-33:35

    You have to revere it.

    33:36-34:37

All right, verse 4, it says, "And Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that they for the purpose. And beside him stood... Okay, now here comes a list of names. And I know we have a few pregnant ladies at our church. If you're looking for names, don't get them from this list. And I want you to show me grace. I literally stood here and practiced saying these names out loud, and I'm still going to butcher them. But beside him stood Mattathiah, Shema, Ananiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Masiah on his right hand, and Paddaiah, Mishael, somebody's cat walked across the keyboard here, Malchijah, Hashem, #banana, You're like, "Remember when I said I could totally do Jeff's job?" Yeah, not this part.

    34:40-34:44

Hashbanana, Zachariah, and Meshulam on his left hand.

    34:45-34:52

And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people, and as he opened it, all the people stood.

    34:53-34:54

You see the respect for God's word?

    34:55-34:56

    He stood up.

    34:56-34:57

    And Ezra blessed the Lord.

    34:58-34:58

    Look at this.

    34:59-35:08

The great God and all the people answered, "Amen, Amen!" Lifting up their hands and they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

    35:09-35:13

Did you see the physical response as the Word of God was opened?

    35:15-35:18

Shouting Amen, raising hands, bowing heads, worshipping.

    35:18-35:21

That's the purpose of the Word of God by the way, is to make true worshippers.

    35:23-35:28

You know, the idea that the music is to prepare you for the sermon is completely backwards.

    35:29-35:31

The sermon is to make you a better worshiper.

    35:33-35:38

Because when we get to heaven, they're still going to be leading worship, but I'm going to be out of a job.

    35:40-35:42

The Word of God is to make you a better worshiper.

    35:43-35:55

Psalm 138 verse 2 says, "You have exalted above all things your name and your word." And that's what we should be striving for as a church, is to take the Word of God as seriously as He does.

    35:57-36:03

Because when you revere God's Word, you're learning to revere the God who wrote it, and that's what makes you a sincere worshiper.

    36:04-36:10

And finally, letter D, you have to understand it.

    36:11-36:15

Okay, you have to want it, you have to be attentive to it, you have to revere it, take it for what it is.

    36:16-36:17

Number D, you have to understand it.

    36:19-36:20

    Look at verse 7.

    36:21-36:23

    "Also..." Oh, boy.

    36:24-36:37

"Jeshua, Bani, Shurahbiah, Jamin, Aqab, Shabbatai, Hodiah..." Oh, look, another one.

    36:37-36:49

Another of the "Messiah." "Khaledah, Azariah, Jezebel, Hanun, Pelaiah." Like, didn't anybody in this day believe in nicknames?

    36:52-36:52

    The Levites!

    36:53-36:54

Like, why didn't you start with that?

    36:56-37:00

Help the people to understand the law while the people remained in their places.

    37:00-37:03

They read from the book, the law of God, clearly.

    37:04-37:04

    Look at this.

    37:04-37:12

And they gave the sense so that the people understood the reading." You have to understand it.

    37:13-37:25

I know we're having some fun with the names and stuff like that, not disrespectful, just having some fun, just being honest with our own trouble to pronounce them sometimes, at least my trouble to pronounce them sometimes.

    37:25-37:27

    But something very important here.

    37:27-37:31

Did you notice in verse 7 immediately, they had small group.

    37:32-37:33

    Did you see that?

    37:34-37:41

They had small group, those names, I'm not gonna read them again, but it says they helped the people understand the law.

    37:41-37:49

So while Ezra was reading, you had all of these Levites like spread out through the people, like, do you understand what this is saying?

    37:50-37:51

Can you, do you need me to explain it?

    37:51-37:52

    Do you have any questions?

    37:52-37:54

And like, you know, what exactly does that mean?

    37:54-37:58

And they were helping them understand and it says they were giving them the sense.

    37:58-37:59

Well, this is what God said.

    38:00-38:02

And here's what God meant by that.

    38:02-38:14

And here's what they were doing was having small group and understand that our church, we use small group for the exact same reason that it happened here in Nehemiah, is to help people understand what is proclaimed.

    38:16-38:25

Verse eight says, it says, "They read from the book of the law of God," underline this in your Bible, clearly, clearly, what does the text say?

    38:25-38:27

Do you understand what's being communicated?

    38:28-38:36

And it says, "They gave the sense." It wasn't just understanding the words, it was taking it deeper.

    38:38-38:40

How should my life reflect this truth?

    38:43-38:46

It says, "So the people understood." And they did.

    38:47-38:47

    We're not gonna read.

    38:48-38:51

We're already a little over time here, but it's not gonna be six hours.

    38:52-38:54

    But they responded.

    38:55-38:55

    They understood.

    38:56-39:06

We know this because if you look at verse nine, It says that the Word of God caused weeping, caused great conviction at first, but then verse 12, it ultimately led to rejoicing.

    39:08-39:10

And any biblical sermon should do that.

    39:12-39:14

Any biblical sermon should do that.

    39:14-39:19

It should give the sting, offer the healing, and bring rejoicing.

    39:20-39:31

When the Word of God is proclaimed, you should be able to say, okay, I see where I'm weak, I'm mourning my condition, But I see what God has done for me, and that brings me to praise.

    39:32-39:34

    Every sermon should do that.

    39:36-39:55

That's why Jesus in John 15, 11 said, "These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." Just like in Nehemiah's day, same for our day, Understanding the Word of God is what is going to bring you joy.

    39:58-40:14

So Ephesians 3.10 says, "Through the church, the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places." Through the church, the wisdom of God might be made known.

    40:15-40:20

The world is decaying around us.

    40:21-40:26

So who needs to uphold God's truth?

    40:27-40:28

    The church.

    40:29-40:32

People are hungry for the Word of God.

    40:32-40:33

Who's going to give it to them?

    40:35-40:35

    The church.

    40:37-40:40

The world is full of lost and hurting people.

    40:40-40:47

Who is charged with giving them the healing, life-giving gospel of Jesus Christ?

    40:48-40:49

    The church.

    40:51-40:55

That's why everything we do has to start here.

    40:56-40:59

It has to have a sure foundation.

    40:59-41:09

That's why pillar number one of Harvest Bible Chapter is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    41:10-41:10

    Let's pray.

    41:12-41:14

Father in heaven, I thank You for Your Word.

    41:14-41:22

We would be so clueless as to who You are, what You've done, how we can make You happy, how we are supposed to live.

    41:22-41:24

    We would have no idea.

    41:25-41:32

But You've given us a book that we can read and understand and discuss and apply.

    41:33-41:36

What a beautiful gift that You've given us, Father.

    41:37-41:43

revealing who you are and who we are, and how you have brought us back to yourself.

    41:46-41:54

Father, as we examine who we are as a church, I pray that the hearts of our people will always be for the Word of God.

    41:55-41:57

Our appetites will always be for the Word of God.

    41:58-42:09

Father, we are not here to entertain, We're not here to sort of fulfill some sort of relational fellowship void that someone might have.

    42:10-42:19

Oh yeah, we laugh together and we do have relationships here, Father, but we are here to receive Your Word.

    42:21-42:36

Whether it's me, one of our elders, or whoever stands on this platform, Father, May they always represent You by accurately and clearly proclaiming the authority of Your Word.

    42:37-42:40

Give us a hunger for it, God. Make it the mission of this church.

    42:42-42:48

Make it the appetite of Your people as we take it home.

    42:49-42:59

Thank You, Father, for the joy that You give us when we know and understand and apply Your Word.

    42:59-43:01

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
