Healing: Ultimate Authority

When I live under the authority of Jesus:

  1. I stand in AWE of Jesus. (Mk 1:21-22)

  2. Matthew 28:18 - And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."

  3. I SHARE Jesus with others. (Mk 1:23-28)

  4. I serve Jesus out of GRATITUDE. (Mk 1:29-34)

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 1:21-34

  1. Share the last time Jesus really amazed you. Either something He did in your life, or something from His Word that blew you away. (Mark 1:21-22)

  2. Do you believe demons are active today? Why or why not? In the case of answering “yes”, how would you know if someone has a demon?

Breakout Questions:

  1. Have a “Motive Check” with each other. Have you been serving the Lord out of gratitude? Or have you been in a season of serving Him with some other motive (obligation, routine, etc)?

  2. Pray for one another.

Follow: Drop Everything

Gospel in two words: REPENT and BELIEVE . (Mk 1:14-15)

this year at Harvest Bible Chapel?

    00:03-00:04

    What are we going after?

    00:07-00:08

"Follow the leader." Right, who said that?

    00:09-00:11

    All right, thank you, Deb.

    00:11-00:13

    Follow the leader, right?

    00:13-00:14

    Did you see our sign?

    00:15-00:16

    Did you see our sign?

    00:18-00:18

    Did you know?

    00:20-00:21

Did you know Darren made this?

    00:23-00:25

And if you get close enough, you can see the crayon scribbles.

    00:26-00:29

And he designed this, and it was made locally.

    00:29-00:33

But we look at this sign, and we, "Well, where did we come up with that?

    00:33-00:38

Where did you come up with this 'follow the leader' thing?" From the Bible.

    00:39-00:42

And this message today I'm very excited to share with you.

    00:42-00:52

This message is really the message that sort of is the marquee sermon of the next year.

    00:54-00:59

So turn to Mark chapter 1, and we'll pick up where we left off last week.

    01:01-01:05

Where did you get this idea of "follow the leader," "following Jesus Christ"?

    01:05-01:06

    What does that mean?

    01:09-01:15

Well, we're going to pick up in verse 14 today, just sort of a review from last week.

    01:15-01:23

We saw the first part of Mark, how Jesus prepared for His ministry.

    01:24-01:26

You know, think about what you do.

    01:26-01:30

What did you do to prepare yourself to do what you do?

    01:31-01:36

Some of you right now are in a stage of life where you are preparing yourself for what you're eventually going to do.

    01:36-01:38

Maybe some of you did on-the-job training.

    01:38-01:41

Maybe some of you went to a trade school or a college.

    01:44-01:48

How did Jesus prepare for what He was going to do?

    01:49-01:51

Well, that's what we talked about last week.

    01:51-01:52

He was announced by John the Baptist.

    01:52-01:55

He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness.

    01:56-02:04

He was affirmed by God the Father, and then He was immediately tempted by the devil, and He emerged victorious.

    02:06-02:13

Let's pick up verse 14, after Jesus' training.

    02:14-02:16

Now he's getting to the work of ministry.

    02:16-02:32

It says, "Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God." Now that phrase, "after John was arrested," that's an important phrase because that gives us a timetable.

    02:34-02:47

So if you take the baptism of Jesus that we talked about last week, earlier here in chapter 1, to this point in verse 14, six months would have passed.

    02:48-02:48

    Okay?

    02:48-02:51

    So you're like, "Okay, question.

    02:53-02:55

What happened during those six months?" Right?

    02:55-02:56

    That's a fair question.

    02:57-03:03

Well, if you want to know what happened during those six months, you have to read the gospel of John chapters 1 through 3.

    03:03-03:05

talks about some of the things that happened in that time.

    03:06-03:08

Mark's not really interested in that.

    03:09-03:13

Under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he just decided to cut that part out, okay?

    03:13-03:14

    I don't have a problem with that.

    03:14-03:15

Do you have a problem with that?

    03:15-03:17

I don't have a problem with that, okay?

    03:18-03:22

Mark in writing what he wrote, understand the Gospels weren't biographies.

    03:22-03:23

    Do you know that?

    03:23-03:34

When the Gospel writers sat down to write down the life of Jesus, they weren't like, "I'm going to write down every single thing that he did starting at his birth." That wasn't how they wrote.

    03:34-03:37

When they wrote, they had this in mind.

    03:38-03:39

    What can he teach us?

    03:40-03:41

We talked a little bit about this last week.

    03:42-03:46

Each of the gospel writers took a little different approach in describing Jesus Christ.

    03:47-03:53

So Mark, for whatever reason, wasn't interested in what happened for the first six months after Jesus was baptized.

    03:53-03:56

He's just like, "Okay, now boom, we're going to fast forward.

    03:56-04:02

After John was arrested, let's talk about when Jesus went to Galilee." All right?

    04:02-04:04

    And what did Jesus do?

    04:04-04:05

    What does your Bible say?

    04:05-04:07

He came into Galilee, what was He doing?

    04:13-04:14

Proclaiming the gospel of God, right?

    04:15-04:16

    Not a trick question.

    04:17-04:19

By the way, no trick questions up here, okay?

    04:20-04:21

Let's get that on the table, no trick questions.

    04:23-04:26

He was proclaiming the gospel of God, that's what Jesus did.

    04:29-04:34

And I would just add, if it was good enough for Jesus, I think that's good enough for me.

    04:34-04:37

That's why I don't stand up here and say, "Here's what I was thinking this week, Bob.

    04:37-04:39

Would you like to know my thoughts?" That's not why you're here.

    04:39-04:41

You're here for the gospel of God, right?

    04:41-04:43

    That's what Jesus was about.

    04:43-04:47

So like, why would I think my thing could be any better than the thing that Jesus was preaching about?

    04:48-04:52

Like, "Well, I thought it was the gospel of Jesus Christ." It's the same thing, right?

    04:52-04:54

We saw that in chapter 1, verse 1.

    04:54-04:55

    It's the same thing.

    04:57-05:02

The gospel of God is the message about His Son, Jesus Christ.

    05:04-05:10

It says in verse 15, "And saying," okay, so what is the gospel of God?

    05:10-05:10

    Well, here it is.

    05:11-05:17

"And saying, 'The time is fulfilled.'" Wow.

    05:19-05:25

And at this point in history, the Jews were waiting for the Messiah to come.

    05:27-05:41

All through the Old Testament, God promised that the Messiah was going to come, and He was going to reign, and He was going to be glorious, and the Spirit of the Lord was going to be upon Him, and He was going to revolutionize everything.

    05:44-05:53

So you have this history of these people waiting for this one man to show up, and Jesus shows up and says, "It's time.

    05:54-05:55

    It's time.

    05:57-06:16

The Messiah has come." He says, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand." I shared with you last week that word "gospel." It's used in the Bible, but it was also used in secular ways.

    06:17-06:22

But it describes the good news that a king is bringing in a new era.

    06:22-06:23

    That's what gospel means.

    06:24-06:25

They used it to describe Caesar.

    06:25-06:26

    "Hey, we got good news.

    06:27-06:36

The king is coming, and he's going to usher in a whole new era, a whole new way of living." And certainly it pertains to Jesus more than any other king in history.

    06:39-06:42

understand the gospel was about a kingdom, okay?

    06:42-06:43

The gospel was about a kingdom.

    06:45-06:46

    And you join this kingdom.

    06:47-06:47

    How?

    06:48-06:54

He says, "The kingdom of God is at hand." This was Jesus' sermon.

    06:59-07:02

Repent and believe in the gospel.

    07:05-07:09

Underline those words in your Bible, "Repent and believe." the sermon.

    07:10-07:11

    "The King is here.

    07:11-07:13

All of history's waited for this moment.

    07:13-07:16

I'm bringing in a new era, so what do we do about it?" Jesus said, "Here's what you do.

    07:17-07:20

You repent and you believe." That's the gospel.

    07:21-07:23

    You repent and you believe.

    07:25-07:32

Jesus doesn't call you to evaluate the message or to critique the Bible or to debate God or try to explain things away.

    07:36-07:38

He calls you to do two things, repent and believe.

    07:39-07:42

That's why in your outline, first of all, gospel in two words, repent, believe.

    07:42-07:43

That's the gospel in two words.

    07:44-07:46

Like, well, what does repent mean?

    07:49-07:55

Well, repent literally means think afterwards.

    07:56-08:00

That's what the word means, think afterwards, or think differently.

    08:01-08:04

Or we would say repent means this, it means to change your mind.

    08:05-08:07

    That's what repentance literally means.

    08:07-08:13

A lot of times we associate repentance with action, but action is the fruit, okay?

    08:13-08:14

    Action is the fruit.

    08:16-08:19

Aaron can train our dog to do things, okay?

    08:19-08:20

    That's the action.

    08:20-08:21

You can train a dog to do things.

    08:22-08:23

    That's not really repentance.

    08:23-08:24

    Repentance gets where?

    08:24-08:33

Well, repentance starts here, and it means to change the way you're thinking about things, to illustrate, "Here's how we are by nature.

    08:33-08:36

By nature we're walking in our sin." And what do we think about our sin?

    08:37-08:38

    I'll speak for myself.

    08:38-08:41

When I was walking in sin, I loved my sin.

    08:41-08:46

And all this sin makes me so happy, and I'm fulfilling the lust of the flesh, and my back was towards God.

    08:48-08:49

But this was me by nature.

    08:49-08:52

I love sin, and this is so good for me.

    08:52-08:55

And the message of repentance says, "You know what?

    08:55-09:03

You need to change the way you're thinking about your sin." And you step back and you look at sin from God's perspective and say, "This isn't fun.

    09:05-09:06

    This is destructive.

    09:07-09:12

This stuff that I thought was making my life so happy is actually making me miserable.

    09:13-09:15

    It's hurting other people.

    09:17-09:18

    It's hurting myself.

    09:21-09:23

And you're sort of reevaluating here.

    09:23-09:31

"I need to change the way I'm thinking about my sin." The Bible says sin is pleasurable for a moment.

    09:34-09:39

It is in the moment, but sin is never pleasurable long term.

    09:40-09:44

And repentance literally means this, "You know, I'm changing my mind.

    09:44-09:46

    I'm not going after this.

    09:46-09:55

Instead, I'm going after God." That's repentance, changing your mind about sin and changing your mind about the Lord.

    10:01-10:11

It's important because repentance is always, always, everybody say always, repentance is always the first part of the message, always.

    10:19-10:26

Over the years I've offered people $500 for anybody that can show me anywhere in Scripture where God offers forgiveness without repentance.

    10:28-10:28

    Never had to pay up.

    10:29-10:32

You don't see anywhere in God's Word where God says, "You know what?

    10:33-10:35

You just keep living in sin.

    10:35-10:39

I'm just going to forgive you anyways." It's not there.

    10:40-10:52

You look at every preacher from the Old Testament, you look at the writings in the New Testament, and you have to look no further than Jesus Christ Himself that the message of the gospel starts with repentance.

    10:52-10:54

You need to change your mind, man.

    10:55-11:12

You need to change the way you're thinking about sin, and change the way you're thinking about God. There's no salvation without repentance, there's just not. God will take you just as you are. He's not going to leave you that way.

    11:14-11:32

So Jesus said, "The time is fulfilled, the kingdom is at hand." He came to establish a kingdom, and gloriously it's still happening, isn't it?

    11:32-11:33

    It's still happening.

    11:33-11:34

    Are you in?

    11:34-11:35

    Are you in this kingdom?

    11:36-11:36

    Are you in?

    11:39-11:40

    Are you in the kingdom?

    11:44-11:45

    Which king are you following?

    11:48-11:51

We talk about follow the leader, you know, you're following somebody.

    11:54-11:54

    Who's your king?

    11:56-11:59

Who's seated on the throne of your heart?

    11:59-12:00

    Who's sitting there right now?

    12:02-12:06

For a lot of people, the answer is me, and I would say, "Well, you need to get off the throne.

    12:09-12:13

Let the rightful king sit there." It's still happening.

    12:14-12:15

    He's still advancing his kingdom.

    12:16-12:17

We're seeing it in our church.

    12:17-12:20

We're seeing it across the world.

    12:24-12:25

    Have you repented and believed?

    12:26-12:28

So that's the gospel in two words, repent and believe.

    12:29-12:31

Let's talk about discipleship in two words.

    12:33-12:37

Discipleship in two words is this, I want you to write this down, follow Jesus.

    12:38-12:39

    That's discipleship.

    12:41-12:42

    That's discipleship.

    12:44-12:58

They're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, you've said so many times that this church is about making disciples, so you're going to have to define what it means to follow Jesus." So let's look at the text, and then we're going to go back and make some comments.

    13:00-13:17

It says, "Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon," that's Peter, Jesus actually renames him later, "he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon." I'm like, "Andrew, man, I feel your pain.

    13:17-13:21

Do you feel Andrew's pain?" He's the brother of Simon.

    13:21-13:23

Like he doesn't even have like his own thing.

    13:23-13:25

Like I felt that growing up.

    13:26-13:27

    Oh, you're Darren's brother.

    13:28-13:29

    Oh, you're Darren's brother.

    13:30-13:34

I'm just like, yeah, Andrew, I know what that's like.

    13:35-13:38

Forever identified just as being somebody's brother.

    13:38-13:39

    It's okay.

    13:40-13:44

It's okay as long as you have a brother like Simon.

    13:50-13:52

I'm going to lighten up, welcome to church.

    13:53-13:56

Casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.

    13:57-14:11

And Jesus said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men." And immediately they left their nets and followed Him.

    14:14-14:25

And going on a little further, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John, his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.

    14:27-14:38

And immediately he called them, and they left their father, Zebedee, in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.

    14:41-14:42

So what does it mean to follow Jesus?

    14:42-14:47

Well, interestingly, do you know that's the first and the last thing that Jesus said to Peter?

    14:47-14:47

    Did you know that?

    14:51-15:00

The very first thing Jesus says to Peter is, "Follow me." You get to the end of John's Gospel, John 21, verses 19 and 22, Jesus says it to Peter two more times.

    15:02-15:17

And it must have stuck because when Peter wrote his first epistle, 1 Peter chapter 2, Verse 21 says, "For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you might," what?

    15:18-15:51

"Follow in His steps." So Jesus shows up to the fishermen, and He shows up to us today with a command, and that command is "Follow Me." And I don't know about you, but when I hear that command, my response is this, "I'm just so unworthy of that." Anybody with me on that?

    15:51-15:53

Anybody feel the unworthiness of that?

    15:54-16:00

Jesus has followed me, and I'm like, "I'm just some loser from Shecorah.

    16:02-16:03

    I feel so unworthy.

    16:04-16:05

    I am so unqualified.

    16:09-16:19

How can I live up to what He's called me to?" Well, the answer is found in one phrase.

    16:21-16:31

Look at verse 17 again, and if you miss this, you're going to miss everything we talk about for the rest of the year.

    16:33-16:35

So you have to underline this in your Bible.

    16:35-16:40

We will have ushers at the door checking your Bibles to make sure this is underlined.

    16:41-17:04

Look at what Jesus said, "Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men." Follow Me and I will make you become fishers of men.

    17:06-17:15

Jesus isn't calling you to follow Him because of who you are, but because of what He can make you.

    17:19-17:22

Jesus isn't looking down from heaven saying, "See Bob Wilber?

    17:22-17:24

He's got some stuff going on.

    17:24-17:26

    There's a guy that I can use.

    17:27-17:29

Look at all that Bob brings to the table.

    17:30-17:33

That's the kind of guy I'm after." That's not how it is.

    17:35-17:38

It's not because of what you are, it's because of what He's going to make you.

    17:41-17:43

Follow me, Jesus says, and I will make you.

    17:46-17:52

The problem is, Christians, we get our formulas all mixed up.

    17:53-17:59

And when somehow we turn it into something like, you know what, you need to make something of yourself.

    17:59-18:02

You need to get your act together, and then you follow Jesus.

    18:02-18:11

And then we, sometimes we carry that over into our evangelism, like get your act together, get your life in order, and then you can follow Jesus.

    18:12-18:15

And that is not what Jesus said.

    18:16-18:24

Jesus said to follow Him, and He will make you become what He wants you to be.

    18:27-18:29

Jesus doesn't call who is qualified.

    18:30-18:32

Jesus qualifies who is called, okay?

    18:32-18:39

And Jesus isn't calling the people who can follow Him, Jesus is calling the people who will follow Him.

    18:45-18:51

It's not based on your intellect, your talents, your expertise, your charisma, your pay scale.

    18:51-18:53

It's not based on any of those things.

    18:55-18:56

It's based on one thing, really.

    18:56-18:57

    It's your will.

    18:58-18:59

Are you willing to follow Jesus Christ?

    19:05-19:13

And if you are, you have to know that He's going to make you something.

    19:13-19:18

And I really think that might be scary for some people.

    19:19-19:22

If I follow Jesus, He's not going to leave me as I am.

    19:23-19:25

Jesus is going to make me something.

    19:29-19:30

Well what does He want to make you?

    19:32-19:34

What does He want to make you?

    19:37-19:40

Well Jesus said, "Follow me and I will make you become," what?

    19:40-19:41

    What does your Bible say?

    19:43-19:49

"Fishers of men." Okay, it's easy to miss this picture.

    19:50-19:53

When I think of fishing, you know what the first thing is that I think of?

    19:55-19:56

What do you think of when you think of fishing?

    19:57-19:58

Don't get all biblical on me, okay?

    19:58-19:59

Don't give me Sunday school answer.

    20:00-20:01

    Yeah, right, Sally, right.

    20:02-20:04

You think of the reel and the rod and the hook.

    20:04-20:06

That's what I think of when I think of fishing.

    20:06-20:14

Actually, I think of my father because when we were kids, remember, Darren, we'd go to Binks' Pond.

    20:15-20:16

And I'll be honest with you.

    20:18-20:21

my dad to death, but I just, I didn't get the fishing thing. I just, I didn't get it.

    20:23-20:40

Because I remember going and we'd, you know, well first you're gonna like, first you're gonna impale the worm. At the risk of sounding like a sissy, gross, don't Don't judge me.

    20:42-20:43

All right, I'm a bit of a sissy.

    20:44-20:44

    It's okay.

    20:45-20:45

    It's all right.

    20:48-20:55

You got to impale this worm, not just like once, but you have to impale it like five times to get this wad of worm goo.

    20:56-20:57

    And then you cast it.

    20:59-21:04

And I remember going with dad, "Oh, Jeff, the bobber went down." You give it a yank, you pull it in.

    21:06-21:06

    Fish.

    21:07-21:14

And I remember saying, "Dad, doesn't that hook hurt?" Because the hook is through their face.

    21:14-21:24

I'm like, "Dad, doesn't that hurt?" I remember Dad always said, "Oh no, Jeff, they can't feel that." I'm like, "How do you know?" We've surveyed 100 fish.

    21:25-21:37

How does that feel?" But anyways, a lot of times I'd have to have Dad help me take it off of the hook because I just didn't have the, it made the sound and

    21:38-21:38

    (flapping)

    21:39-21:47

the fish is all flopping, but I'm still convinced they're like, twitches out of pain, like, oh!

    21:48-21:49

    Hook in my head.

    21:49-21:58

Well, I remember throwing the fish back, and I'd be like, all right, I'm done.

    22:00-22:01

    Dad's like, you're done?

    22:01-22:03

I'm like, yeah, I'm gonna go take a nap.

    22:03-22:06

Like, we're not done, we just got here.

    22:06-22:08

And I'm like, no, we're done.

    22:10-22:11

    No, we're not done.

    22:11-22:13

Well, dad, what'd we come here to do?

    22:13-22:15

We came here to catch a fish, right?

    22:16-22:18

    Mission accomplished, okay?

    22:18-22:21

I'm going to call this a victory and I'm gonna go take a nap.

    22:21-22:23

And I just didn't get the fishing thing.

    22:24-22:28

Maybe it's because I didn't get the hunting thing either.

    22:29-22:31

And people don't do that hunting, right?

    22:32-22:40

Like you shoot a deer with an arrow and then you just go up and you pull the arrow out and throw the deer back into the woods, catch and release, right?

    22:43-22:45

"Oh, Pastor Jeff, you're so outdoorsy." I know.

    22:46-22:49

I'm practically Duck Dynasty up here.

    22:54-23:02

Well, when Jesus was talking about being fishers of men, his disciples weren't thinking about being with my dad at Binks' pond.

    23:04-23:12

Actually, did you know that they actually fished at night?

    23:12-23:13

    Did you know that?

    23:13-23:18

Actually, Luke chapter 5 and verse 5 says that they were fishing all night.

    23:19-23:20

Why did they fish at night?

    23:20-23:32

Well, actually, what they did was they cast nets, but they would actually shine light in the darkness, and that light would attract the fish.

    23:34-23:40

So when they got the fish to come attracted by the light, they'd pull their nets in and have a haul of fish.

    23:42-23:52

And right now maybe some light bulbs are going off over our heads, because that's what Jesus was calling the disciples to, and that's what He's calling us to.

    23:54-24:00

He says, "I want you to go fish for people," and that doesn't mean we're going to go, stab people and drag them to church on a line.

    24:01-24:13

What he's saying is, "You're going to have light shining through you, and that is going to attract people to my kingdom." So do you see the picture?

    24:14-24:15

    Do you see the picture?

    24:16-24:17

    Jesus said, "Follow me.

    24:17-24:19

I'm going to make you into something.

    24:19-24:27

I'm going to shine my light through you, and that's going to attract people to me." That's what He's calling us to.

    24:31-24:37

Jesus wants to be alive in you and through you.

    24:38-24:50

And just like the moon reflects the light of the sun, our job as believers is simply to reflect the light of Jesus Christ, to let Him shine through us.

    24:50-24:52

    That's what attracts people, okay?

    24:54-25:08

That's what attracts people, and we can do all kinds of gimmicks in the church to, you know, we'll get big inflatables up here and dunking booths, and you know, we'll do caricature sketches and all these other things, and you know, we'll put on this big carnival and we'll try to attract people.

    25:11-25:12

    That's not Jesus' plan.

    25:12-25:27

Jesus' plan is, "I'm going to live through you, and when people see the light of me through you, that's what's going to attract people." So when Jesus said, "Follow me, I will make you fishers of men," the disciples would have been thinking of the attraction of the light.

    25:29-25:32

So that's what it means to follow Jesus.

    25:36-25:41

It's allowing Him to make us something.

    25:41-25:44

Follow me and I will make you.

    25:45-25:53

So the question on our minds as we head down the homestretch here is, "How?" How do I follow Jesus?

    25:56-25:56

    How do I do it?

    25:56-25:59

Well, a little preacher insight for you.

    26:00-26:04

Some weeks putting the sermon together is harder than other weeks.

    26:05-26:09

And looking at this text, this one was a no-brainer.

    26:11-26:12

    How do you follow Jesus?

    26:13-26:15

    Look at verse 18.

    26:16-26:17

    Just look at verse 18.

    26:18-26:19

    How did they follow Jesus?

    26:20-26:21

Do you see three things in there?

    26:21-26:22

    Go ahead, shout them out.

    26:22-26:57

first one? Immediately, right? Okay, this is like a little Bible college seminar. Here's how the sermon gets put together. What's the first thing? Immediately, ding. There's something to that. What's the next thing? Shout it out. They left their nets. Ding, that's number two. And what's the third thing? They followed Him. Right. Ding again. So how do I follow Jesus, this is 101, but this is a lot easier to understand up here than it is to do.

    27:00-27:02

So the first thing is this, do it immediately.

    27:03-27:04

    Do it immediately.

    27:06-27:14

If you're sitting here today and you're not following Jesus Christ, I say with as much love as I can muster, what in the world are you waiting for?

    27:16-27:19

Because the truth is, you have no reason to wait.

    27:21-27:27

Every time the Bible talks about the day of salvation, the day of decision, the day of response, do you know what day that is?

    27:29-27:30

We want to say tomorrow, right?

    27:30-27:32

    Like when our diet starts.

    27:32-27:34

    My diet starts tomorrow, right?

    27:35-27:36

A lot of people do that to Jesus.

    27:37-27:53

I'm going to get real serious about Jesus tomorrow, or after the first of the year, Or once I get through this chapter of my life, I'm going to get real serious about going back to church and… No, the answer is today.

    27:55-27:55

    Do it immediately.

    27:57-28:02

Jesus says, "Simon, Andrew, follow me." We'll get back to you on that.

    28:04-28:05

Can't wait until the penguin season is over.

    28:08-28:08

    Immediately.

    28:12-28:19

Put it in perspective, you can't do anything about your past, and you don't need to.

    28:20-28:24

Some people are hesitant to follow Jesus because, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, you don't know all the horrible things I've done.

    28:25-28:30

When John the Baptist said, 'This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,' Jesus deals with your sin.

    28:30-28:31

    He takes your sin away.

    28:32-28:33

That's what the cross is all about.

    28:34-28:35

    That's what we're celebrating.

    28:37-28:39

You can't do anything about your past, and you don't need to.

    28:39-28:41

    Jesus took care of that.

    28:43-28:46

But you can't put it off until tomorrow because you may not have it.

    28:50-28:54

All you can focus on is what you're going to do about Jesus today.

    28:55-28:57

So I would just ask you, are you following Jesus today?

    28:58-29:07

If I asked you, if I was standing at the door, grab each one of you, line up, single file, I'm not going to do this, don't run out scared, but are you following Jesus today?

    29:08-29:12

Well, you know, Pastor Jeff, I made a decision to follow Jesus back in 1982.

    29:13-29:13

    Fantastic.

    29:13-29:14

    Are you following Jesus today?

    29:18-29:25

Yeah, you know what, I was involved in ministry way back when, but are you following Jesus today?

    29:27-29:28

    Immediately.

    29:29-29:29

    Get on it.

    29:33-29:37

Secondly, it says that they left their nets.

    29:38-29:44

I have down on my outline, write this down on yours, "Leave some things behind." Leave some things behind.

    29:44-29:51

You know, it's funny when you study the Bible as opposed to just like reading it like a magazine or whatever.

    29:53-30:23

For some reason, I used to think that these men, you know, Simon and Andrew and James and John. I used to have this, let's be honest, tell me if you had this too, but I used to have this picture that they were like these four dirty like tattered guys, they were wearing like this, you know, like tattered burlap sack, and they were filthy, and they didn't even have any shoes, and they were like, all four of them were in like one canoe, right?

    30:23-30:29

Did you ever have that picture? Or is it just me? Anybody else? Just me? Oh, Jane Auer, Thank you, Jay.

    30:30-30:31

    All right, Jay, listen.

    30:31-30:37

I used to think that too, that they were just like, they had nothing else going on.

    30:37-30:38

    That's the picture I had.

    30:38-30:46

They were just like hanging out at the docks, and Jesus shows up, He's like, "Follow me," and they're just like, "We really don't have anything else to do.

    30:48-31:07

We might as well follow Jesus." Side note, I heard, you remember the guy giving the testimony about people coming to Christ in Africa, and I remember him saying, "You know, we're seeing all these people come to Jesus in Africa because they don't have anything else to do." I'm sure there's more to the story than that.

    31:09-31:12

But I used to think that's what was happening with the disciples.

    31:13-31:14

Like they just had nothing going on.

    31:16-31:26

They sat by their canoe for 18 hours of the day, and then they'd go out for an hour and catch a couple fish to eat, and then they'd go home and take a nap.

    31:27-31:37

And actually, this is why it's important to study God's Word, actually these disciples would have had some money.

    31:39-31:40

Like, how do you know that?

    31:41-31:42

Well, look at verse 20 again.

    31:45-31:48

It says, "James and John left their father in the boat with," who?

    31:50-31:51

    hired servants.

    31:52-31:56

That meant that they had some money.

    31:58-32:02

Poor fishermen didn't have the income to hire servants out to help.

    32:02-32:06

So these weren't like guys hanging out fishing telling stories.

    32:07-32:09

    Fishing was their job.

    32:09-32:13

Fishing wasn't just their job, it was their business.

    32:14-32:16

    And they were successful businessmen.

    32:20-32:26

Actually in John's gospel we find out that the high priest knew who John was.

    32:27-32:28

    How did he know him?

    32:29-32:32

He must have had some level of influence and success.

    32:32-32:34

He must have had a few bucks.

    32:34-32:37

He must have been… fishing business must have been good to him rather.

    32:39-33:09

So to these people who were, picture shift here, these people that were working and earning and had their thing going, their thing was working and they had this successful business, Jesus walks up to them and says, "Follow me because I'm going to make you something." Well, it says that Simon and Andrew left their nets, verse 18.

    33:12-33:15

I'm sure that was difficult, but do you know what I think was much harder?

    33:16-33:21

Verse 20, it says, "Immediately called James and John," immediately called them, it says they left their father.

    33:22-33:24

That sort of ratchets it up a bit, doesn't it?

    33:25-33:26

    Sort of raises the stakes.

    33:27-33:34

It's one thing to leave a pile of fishy nets laying on the ground, it's another thing to walk away from dad.

    33:36-33:37

    But that's what they did.

    33:40-33:41

    This is the paradox.

    33:42-33:43

    Jot this down.

    33:44-33:45

    It's a paradox.

    33:45-33:47

Don't ask me to explain it, this is just reality.

    33:47-33:53

But following Jesus costs you nothing, but it costs you everything.

    33:56-33:58

And Jesus costs you nothing, but it costs you everything.

    34:00-34:10

And as we see with Simon and Andrew, as we see with James and John, sometimes it looks different from person to person, but the call is still the same, right?

    34:14-34:21

Well, if I follow Jesus, does that mean that I'm going to have to go sit in a tent in Africa and be a missionary?

    34:22-34:26

My answer is maybe, but not necessarily.

    34:27-34:29

I don't know what He's going to call you to.

    34:29-34:30

I don't know what He's going to make you.

    34:37-34:39

But following Jesus costs you nothing and it costs you everything.

    34:40-34:41

    Here's what I do know.

    34:42-34:48

You must be willing to drop anything that inhibits or prohibits following Jesus.

    34:49-34:56

Anything that is in the way of you following Jesus, and we define what that is, anything that's in the way, you've got to drop it.

    35:02-35:03

And you know what it is for you.

    35:04-35:05

    You know what that is.

    35:08-35:11

I'm sure if we sat down and talked for a while, we could figure it out.

    35:11-35:17

I could figure it out just in conversation what it is, but you know what it is for you.

    35:17-35:24

If I asked you right now, is there anything in your life that is keeping you from following Jesus Christ the way that you know that you should?

    35:25-35:32

Is there anything keeping you from allowing Him to make you what He wants you to be?

    35:33-35:35

Are you holding on to something that you need to drop?

    35:36-35:36

    You know what it is.

    35:39-35:45

The people get more concerned about what they give up instead of what they can gain, and that's the problem.

    35:47-35:49

We're concerned with what they have to give up instead of what they can gain.

    35:55-35:57

And here's all I know about that, two things.

    36:01-36:03

If that's you, if you're like, "Hey, I'm struggling.

    36:03-36:04

I know I need to give stuff up.

    36:05-36:11

I know there's some things in the way of me following Jesus." I only know two things about that, and the first one is this, number one, it's worth it.

    36:12-36:15

If you have to drop something to follow Jesus, it's worth it.

    36:18-36:46

I have never in 16 years of pastoral ministry, being with Christians all over the world, To this day, I have never met one Christian who has expressed any level, any degree of regret for something they gave up to follow Jesus Christ.

    36:46-36:47

    I've never heard it.

    36:47-36:49

    I have never heard it.

    36:49-36:56

If that's your testimony, gosh, I've never heard it.

    36:56-36:59

And I've talked to a lot of Christians over the past decade and a half.

    37:00-37:17

I've never heard somebody say, "Well, you know what Jeff, way back when, Jesus, you know, I responded to the call to follow Jesus and you know, sometimes I kind of look back and think, I'm not really sure it was worth it." I've never heard that.

    37:21-37:30

And not speaking for other people, but if I can speak solely for myself for just one One second, that was my story back in 1995.

    37:31-37:32

I had not a clue about anything.

    37:33-37:36

The only thing I knew in my life was that God was calling me to preach.

    37:36-37:38

I didn't even know how somebody became a preacher.

    37:39-37:40

Then I found out they had Bible colleges.

    37:41-37:42

    Did you know about this?

    37:42-37:43

Did you know they have Bible colleges?

    37:43-37:44

    Did you know that?

    37:44-37:45

    Yeah, thanks for telling me.

    37:45-37:46

    I didn't know that.

    37:47-37:59

And all I knew was He was calling me to do this, and I just kind of dropped everything and went to Bible college, have not regretted one second of it.

    38:00-38:01

    Not one second.

    38:04-38:06

So first of all, it's worth it.

    38:07-38:14

The second thing I would tell you about this, certainly the Bible says that you need to count the cost of following Jesus.

    38:15-38:19

I would add to that, you need to count the cost of not following Jesus.

    38:24-38:26

    Because that is always regret.

    38:27-38:28

    That is always regret.

    38:30-38:50

And I could keep you here until the Pittsburgh Steelers win a game this season, which is looking like it's going to be a very long time, but I could tell you stories of people that knew what they were supposed to do, knew how they were supposed to follow Jesus, knew what He was calling them to, and they didn't, and it has been nothing but tears and regret.

    38:51-38:57

If only, if only, if only, if only I would have been obedient to the gospel.

    38:58-39:02

If only I would have trusted Jesus in this area.

    39:03-39:06

If only I didn't insist on getting my own way.

    39:07-39:09

That is always the story of regret.

    39:12-39:19

God help us so many times we're just like, "You know what Jesus, I do love you, but I'm just so into nets right now.

    39:19-39:32

I'm just really into nets, and nets are kind of my thing right now, and the disciples got it." It just says they left their nets, they left their Father, they dropped everything.

    39:35-39:37

Following Jesus means you're going to have to leave some things behind.

    39:40-39:41

You know what that is for you.

    39:42-39:52

Finally, okay, it says, "Immediately they left their nets and followed Him." Number three, write this down, and you'll understand why in a second.

    39:53-39:55

    Be in the way.

    39:56-39:58

Capitalize the word "way." Be in the way.

    40:01-40:02

    This is important.

    40:03-40:07

I'm not saying get in the way.

    40:08-40:11

Like, yeah, Jesus wants to do something, but I'm like getting in His way.

    40:13-40:14

    Be in the way.

    40:17-40:21

You know there are two different words for the word "follow" in this passage.

    40:21-40:22

    Did you know that?

    40:22-40:23

    I didn't know that.

    40:24-40:25

I'll be honest with you, I learned something this week.

    40:25-40:30

While you're doing what you're doing throughout the week, this is the stuff that I'm discovering.

    40:31-40:34

There are actually two different words for "follow" in this passage.

    40:35-40:47

And sometimes we just, reading the Bible in English, certainly we get what God's communicating to us, but sometimes we get a much deeper sense of what's happening when we do a little homework, and that's why I want to share this with you.

    40:48-40:59

But verse 17, "Jesus said, 'Follow Me.'" Now that word in the Greek, "follow," literally means "pursue," literally.

    41:03-41:08

literally pursue, like you're going after someone, like you're chasing someone.

    41:09-41:09

    That's what that word means.

    41:09-41:24

Jesus shows up and basically says, "Walk behind me." Interestingly, though, in verse 18 it says, "They left their nets and they followed Him," but that's a different word in the Greek.

    41:25-41:40

And what that word is literally means, "to be in the same way." You know, back in Jesus' day, there were people that that was their job.

    41:41-41:42

    They were called followers.

    41:45-41:46

    It was actually a title.

    41:48-42:01

"Hi, what do you do for a living?" "Hi, I'm a truck driver." "Hi, I'm a chef." "Hi, I'm a veterinarian." There were people that their job, like, "Hi, what do you do?" "I'm a follower." What that meant was they attached themselves to a rabbi.

    42:02-42:07

And they're like, "Yeah, I base my… what do you do for a living?" "I follow this guy around and learn from him.

    42:07-42:11

That's what I do." And that's the sense in which this word is used.

    42:12-42:22

Jesus says, "Walk behind me," and it says they left… immediately they left their things and they were found to be in the same way of Jesus.

    42:25-42:28

Earlier we said gospel means there's good news, this king's bringing in a new era.

    42:30-42:32

Like, "Yeah, pastor, you said that a lot the last couple of weeks.

    42:32-42:34

What does that mean?" Here's what it means.

    42:35-42:40

This new era is an entire new way of life.

    42:43-42:45

Like, "What do you mean by that?" Here's what I mean by that.

    42:47-42:49

There's the world's way of doing things.

    42:53-42:55

There's the law's way of doing things.

    42:57-42:59

    Jesus said, "Now," what?

    43:01-43:03

There's my way of doing things.

    43:06-43:08

And this is what it means to follow Jesus.

    43:08-43:13

This is what it means to be found in the same way of Jesus.

    43:13-43:14

You're like, "Can you give me some examples?

    43:14-43:20

I would love to." What does the world tell you to do with your enemies?

    43:24-43:25

    What does the world say?

    43:27-43:28

    Hate your enemies, right?

    43:28-43:29

    Get even.

    43:30-43:32

    I don't get mad, I get even.

    43:33-43:37

Revenge is a dish best served cold, right?

    43:37-43:39

And that's what the world says.

    43:41-43:52

says, "Don't let anybody take advantage of you." And Jesus says, "I'm here to usher in a new era." And what does Jesus say to do with your enemies?

    43:54-44:03

"You have heard that it was said, but I say to you, love your enemies.

    44:04-44:10

Pray for those who persecute you." Do you see how this is a whole radical new way of living?

    44:13-44:16

This is the new era that Jesus Christ has brought in.

    44:18-44:21

What does the world say about position or power?

    44:22-44:24

You got to look out for number one, right?

    44:26-44:28

You got to look out for number one.

    44:30-44:31

    You got to exalt yourself.

    44:32-44:34

You got to put people in their place.

    44:34-44:35

You got to throw your weight around.

    44:36-44:38

You've got to let people know who's boss.

    44:38-44:41

You've got to know who the pack leader is.

    44:43-44:44

    That's the world's way.

    44:46-44:49

Then Jesus says, "But I say unto you," what?

    44:49-45:00

"The greatest among you shall be your servant." This is a completely radical, different way of living.

    45:01-45:07

This king is bringing in a new era unlike anything that anybody's ever dreamed of.

    45:11-45:14

What does the world say when someone wrongs you?

    45:15-45:15

    Don't forgive.

    45:16-45:17

    Don't forgive.

    45:18-45:18

    Hatred.

    45:24-45:32

Jesus says, "But I say to you," not seven times, seventy times seven.

    45:34-45:39

Jesus says, "You forgive until you lose count." You forgive because you've been forgiven.

    45:41-45:42

    This is the new era.

    45:47-45:54

You're like, "Yeah, this new era, this new way of living seems awfully hard." And you're right.

    45:55-46:00

That's why we need Him to make us become what He wants us to be.

    46:00-46:05

You can't live this new way of living in your own strength.

    46:08-46:12

That's why He says, "I will make you.

    46:13-46:21

I will make you." Our worship team would make their way forward.

    46:21-46:22

    We're going to close.

    46:25-46:30

And right now you're saying, "Okay, follow Jesus." Got it.

    46:31-46:32

    What's the next step?

    46:34-46:35

    What's the next step?

    46:41-46:42

    There is no step two.

    46:43-46:45

    There is no step two.

    46:47-46:57

Your priority is to follow Jesus Christ and allow Him to make you what He wants you to be.

    46:59-47:14

Somehow, and I've been so guilty of this, if I can confess before you, somehow we get a few miles down the road, we go a few laps around the block, and we start to say things like, "You know what?

    47:14-47:15

I've got to be a good leader.

    47:18-47:20

I've got to go to this seminar, this conference, this workshop.

    47:21-47:26

I've got to read this latest book or manual about being a better me.

    47:28-47:31

You know, I've got to improve my people skills.

    47:33-47:34

    I gotta try harder.

    47:38-47:39

I don't have the right friends.

    47:39-47:57

I need to learn how to win friends and influence people, and I need to be this celebrity pastor or the veterinarian of the year, or I need to, I need to.

    48:01-48:11

Now, what you need to do is to go back to the original call and the original promise.

    48:13-48:23

Right now, drop everything, follow Jesus, and let Him make you into what He wants you to be.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 1:14-20

  1. Is it possible to receive salvation without repentance? How would you describe repentance to someone? (Mark 1:14-15)

  2. What does it mean to “follow Jesus”? (Mark 1:17-18)
Note: Remember the word “follow” in Mk 1:18 means “to be found in the same way”. What does that mean?

Breakout Questions:

  1. Is there anything in your life right now that is inhibiting your walk with Jesus? That is, “I believe I would be following Jesus better if I stopped ______________________.” What “net” do you need to drop? (Mark 1:18)

  2. Pray for one another.

  • 00:00-00:06

Let's not waste any time, let's not waste any words, let's not waste any paper getting this down.

    00:07-00:09

That's the gospel according to Mark.

    00:12-00:13

Actually you see that right away.

    00:13-00:13

    Don't you?

    00:13-00:15

Look at Mark chapter 1 verse 1.

    00:17-00:18

    Here's your on-ramp.

    00:19-00:23

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

    00:24-00:24

    Boom.

    00:24-00:25

    That's His introduction.

    00:26-00:27

    Isn't that awesome?

    00:28-00:29

Like, we're not wasting any words here.

    00:30-00:32

Mark's like, "Let's just get right to it.

    00:32-00:54

Let's talk about the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God." Now the word "gospel" literally means "good news." But did you know, this is something I learned this week, did you know that the word "gospel" wasn't just a biblical word, but it was also a secular word?

    00:54-00:58

Do you know they found in ancient inscriptions talking about Caesar?

    00:59-01:04

They were talking about the gospel of Caesar, because here's literally what it meant.

    01:05-01:10

It's good news that a king is coming to usher in a new era.

    01:10-01:12

    That's literally what it meant.

    01:14-01:18

It was used in the secular world and in the biblical language.

    01:18-01:24

A king is coming to usher in a whole new era for us, and that is good news.

    01:24-01:26

That's what the word "gospel" means.

    01:27-01:43

Okay, so Mark is like, "Here's the beginning of this new era, because the King of Kings has shown up." So first of all, in your outline, number one, how did Jesus prepare for this ministry?

    01:44-01:45

Well, first of all, the King is announced.

    01:46-01:47

    Exalt Him.

    01:48-01:49

    The King is announced.

    01:50-01:51

    Exalt Him.

    01:53-02:08

Mark continues, "As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face who will prepare your way.'" The voice of one crying in the wilderness, "Prepare the way of the Lord.

    02:10-02:20

Make His paths straight." So Mark starts out with Scripture, quoting from Malachi and from Isaiah.

    02:20-02:24

He only references Isaiah, but he's quoting from both of the prophets.

    02:25-02:31

Not an uncommon practice when prophets are being quoted to go with the major prophet.

    02:32-02:42

But notice it says, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness." Now, he's not talking about crying out like an infant, okay?

    02:42-02:45

In a second here we're going to see he's talking about John the Baptist.

    02:45-02:51

He doesn't mean that John the Baptist like went to the woods, or like went to the middle desert and just sat there and just started bawling.

    02:52-03:01

It's crying out like the way you cry out when you see your kid standing in the middle of the road, okay?

    03:01-03:02

    That kind of crying out.

    03:03-03:04

"Hey, hey, get off the road!

    03:05-03:06

    What are you doing?

    03:06-03:07

    You're in danger!

    03:08-03:37

Get off there!" Like, "Pastor Jeff, you sound like you've done that before." Yeah, we have a little one that rides a scooter and he likes to just touch the tip of the alley behind our house where cars go through, and he knows, "Hey, get off the road!" You know, it's not, "Would you please consider thinking about getting yourself out of harm's way?" That's not crying out.

    03:37-03:38

    Crying out is urgency!

    03:39-03:47

I'm lifting my voice and I'm saying this as seriously as I can because this is important." That was John the Baptist.

    03:48-03:48

    Alright?

    03:50-03:54

God's sending someone, crying out, but he's preparing the way.

    03:54-03:55

    What does that mean?

    03:56-04:15

Well, understand that kings didn't just roll into town and say, "Hey, everybody, the king is here." Actually, a forerunner always went ahead of the king to announce that he was coming and to prepare the way.

    04:16-04:20

And typically, it was to physically prepare the way.

    04:21-04:22

    Okay, do you understand?

    04:22-04:40

Like the king was coming, so typically somebody would go ahead of the king to make sure that the roads were cleared, to make sure if there were any bridges that needed built, to make sure there were no dangers along the way, it was that person's job to go ahead of the king to make sure that nothing impeded the king's progress to get where he was going.

    04:41-04:49

Because when you're the king, you don't have time for potholes and bridges and all these other things that we deal with here in the Pittsburgh area.

    04:49-04:51

You just need a clear path to get where you're going.

    04:51-04:54

Well, the king would send somebody ahead, "Hey, I'm preparing the way.

    04:55-04:55

    The king's coming.

    04:56-05:04

Get ready." Alright, well, John the Baptist wasn't filling potholes or building bridges.

    05:04-05:09

He was actually… John the Baptist was making spiritual preparation.

    05:10-05:10

    Okay?

    05:11-05:12

    He was making spiritual preparation.

    05:12-05:14

Look at verses 4 and 5.

    05:15-05:28

It says, "John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance forgiveness of sins.

    05:30-05:46

And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him, and the river Jordan confessing their sins." So John the Baptist was making spiritual preparation for Jesus by baptizing, and you're like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    05:46-05:47

    Hang on, Pastor Jeff.

    05:47-05:50

I thought baptism was like a New Testament thing.

    05:50-05:59

I thought baptism was like a after Jesus died, rose from the dead, great commission, go baptize early church book of Acts, Acts chapter 2.

    05:59-06:01

I thought that was a New Testament thing, right?

    06:02-06:12

Well, the Old Testament, Mosaic law had ceremonial washings, true, right?

    06:12-06:25

All the ritualistic ceremonial washings, but did you know in the Old Testament times under the Old Testament law, under the Old Covenant way of doing things, they did have one baptism?

    06:27-06:32

And that baptism was when a Gentile would want to convert to Judaism.

    06:34-06:34

    Okay?

    06:34-06:46

So a Gentile comes and says, "Hey, I see that you're worshiping the living God, and I want to convert to Judaism." They would actually take that Gentile and full body immerse him.

    06:46-06:51

It was a symbol of, "Dude, you don't just need sprinkled.

    06:53-06:54

You don't just need a little washing.

    06:55-07:05

You need full body cleansing because you're coming from pagan dog background to covenant family of God.

    07:05-07:10

It was a big deal, but it was a picture of full body cleansing.

    07:10-07:13

It was a picture of I'm completely worthless.

    07:17-07:21

And that's what John the Baptist was doing for everyone that would come to him.

    07:22-07:25

That was his way of preparing for the coming of the King.

    07:28-07:31

John the Baptist's preparation was this, "The Messiah is coming.

    07:31-07:32

    The King is here.

    07:33-07:34

    Turn from your sin.

    07:35-07:36

    Get your act together.

    07:37-07:39

You want to be messing around when the King shows up?

    07:39-07:40

    Is that what you want?

    07:41-07:46

You want the King to roll into town and you're busy in sin and you're busy dishonoring His name?

    07:47-07:53

Interact together and demonstrate that by this full body cleanse.

    07:53-07:55

That's what John the Baptist was doing.

    07:57-08:11

Look at verse 6, it says, "Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey." What's that all about?

    08:14-08:16

First of all, John the Baptist, he was a manly man.

    08:18-08:18

    Okay?

    08:19-08:21

And, what's up with these clothes?

    08:21-08:24

Well, that's actually just what the prophets wore.

    08:25-08:29

Second Kings chapter 1, verse 8, you see, that's what Elijah wore.

    08:31-08:35

It was like standard dress garb for prophets.

    08:37-08:45

Actually, John the Baptist even ministered near where Elijah ministered, and Jesus said that John the Baptist came in the spirit of Elijah.

    08:47-08:51

But he wasn't concerned with comfort and ease.

    08:55-10:08

He was concerned with fulfilling God's will for his life, and that meant being in the wilderness and yeah, eating locusts and wild honey. What's for dinner? Like the other black meat, locusts, right? It says, "As he preached, and he preached rather saying, 'After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie." Now this job of bending down and untying somebody's shoes and taking somebody's shoes off, that was the job of the lowest of the lowest slaves. Okay, if a household had several slaves, you knew you were at the bottom of the pecking order when you had shoe duty. When it was It's your job to take the shoes off and to be, you know, messing around with your master's feet." That meant pretty much you had nowhere to go but up, because that was the lowest.

    10:09-10:18

And John the Baptist said, "I'm not even cool enough to be Jesus' lowest slave." That's how awesome Jesus is.

    10:18-10:20

You know how awesome He is?

    10:20-10:21

Like look at all of Jesus.

    10:21-10:32

If Jesus had all these servants, and you take the lowest servant that handled the shoes, John the Baptist said, "I'm not even worthy of that." That's how awesome Jesus Christ is.

    10:32-10:34

That's how awesome this King is.

    10:36-11:03

Then in verse 8 he says, "I have baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." John was saying, "All I can do is assist you." And the outward symbol, "He is the only one who can do the work on your heart." So the King is announced, and just like John the Baptist, He must be met by us with humility.

    11:05-11:58

And church, I'd like to remind you that everything God wants to do in your life, everything God wants to do in your life begins and ends with humility. You can't come to Jesus Christ in the first place unless you humble yourself, right? If you think there's any spiritual worth in yourself, you can't even take the first step in coming to Jesus. You can't live the Christian life in your own power. It takes humility to learn to walk in the Spirit, to learn to rely on the Holy Spirit. It takes humility to say, "You know what? I'm going to get myself out of the way. I'm going to humble myself and let Christ be exalted in me and through me." And that takes humility.

    12:02-12:04

    Pride is such a killer.

    12:07-12:08

And you just hear it so often.

    12:09-12:17

We're at a point now where pride is exalted as the virtuous attitude that nobody tells me what to do.

    12:18-12:19

I can take care of myself.

    12:19-12:20

    I'm so important.

    12:20-12:23

This church would close its doors if it wasn't for me.

    12:25-12:28

I'd just like to remind you that you have two choices when it comes to humility.

    12:29-12:30

    You have two choices.

    12:31-12:40

You can either humble yourself, as the Bible commands you to do, or you can allow God to humble you.

    12:46-12:47

Which of those do you think is easier?

    12:50-12:52

Well, I think it's easier if God does it.

    12:52-12:53

We'll just let Him do all the work.

    12:55-12:56

    It's not.

    12:57-13:01

The Bible says God opposes the proud.

    13:02-13:02

    Did you know that?

    13:02-13:04

    God opposes the proud.

    13:04-13:20

You exalt yourself up, you start thinking you're something, God says, "Okay, I oppose the proud." God says, "I'm against you." God's after the destruction of your pride.

    13:24-13:30

Because everything in a Christian life begins and ends with humility, total dependence upon God.

    13:32-13:33

    So, how to humble yourself.

    13:33-13:34

    Jot these things down.

    13:34-13:35

Now, how do you humble yourself?

    13:36-13:38

I want you to jot these down.

    13:38-13:45

This could be a whole other sermon, and we're going to be talking about these things in our small groups this week.

    13:46-13:46

    How do you humble yourself?

    13:47-13:48

First of all, get serious about sin.

    13:51-13:52

    Get serious about sin.

    13:53-13:56

And I mean before God, first of all, obviously.

    13:57-13:59

In Christ, your sins have been forgiven.

    14:02-14:05

But, Christians, you are still dependent on God for those daily struggles.

    14:07-14:08

    Are you struggling with something?

    14:08-14:09

Get serious with God about that.

    14:09-14:10

    He knows.

    14:10-14:11

    Bring it to God.

    14:11-14:18

"God, I'm struggling in this area." I'd also encourage you to get serious about your sin with others.

    14:21-14:23

That's what I love about our small group.

    14:23-14:31

We're able to admit our weaknesses without condemnation, without judgment, but just met with encouragement.

    14:31-14:33

We can come and we can admit our weaknesses.

    14:37-14:38

    I'd rather not, though.

    14:40-14:43

I'd rather everybody think I have my act together.

    14:44-14:47

I'd rather everybody think, "Well, he's just super pastor.

    14:47-14:52

He doesn't struggle with anything." That's pride, okay?

    14:52-14:59

That's pride that wants to exalt myself, that wants you to think better of me than I am.

    14:59-15:05

But listen, don't think great things about me at all, because it took the death of the Son of God to pay for my sin.

    15:05-15:06

That's how bad my sin is.

    15:07-15:08

    How about your sin?

    15:10-15:12

Okay, so get serious about sin, first of all.

    15:12-15:17

    Secondly, submit to authority.

    15:19-15:20

    Submit to authority.

    15:26-15:31

You find the guy that says, and I think this is especially true with guys, I think it's true with ladies, especially in the home.

    15:33-15:36

You're like, "Well, that's a whole other sermon." But I think this is especially true with guys.

    15:38-15:39

    tells me what to do.

    15:42-15:48

Yeah, and that carries over into society and into the workplace and into the church.

    15:51-15:51

    Bad plan.

    15:54-15:54

    Submit to authority.

    15:56-15:57

    That's how to humble yourself.

    15:59-16:08

Pride says, "I am the authority." Humility says, "God has placed people in authority over me." We are all people under authority.

    16:10-16:12

How to humble yourself thirdly, serve others.

    16:13-16:16

Having others ahead of yourself mentality, serve others.

    16:18-16:19

    Serve others.

    16:26-16:32

Oh, I see you have this mission trip coming up to, or this mission event coming up with World Vision.

    16:33-16:34

    That's kind of beneath me.

    16:34-16:36

I don't really do that kind of thing.

    16:36-16:37

    Do it.

    16:39-16:41

Yeah, that seems a little low for me.

    16:42-16:43

    Humble yourself.

    16:47-16:47

    Serve others.

    16:49-16:53

Fourthly, seek assistance and forgiveness from others.

    16:54-16:58

Seek assistance, first of all, seek assistance from others.

    17:01-17:04

Don't be too proud to admit to people that you need help.

    17:06-17:07

    Don't be too proud.

    17:07-17:07

    You need help.

    17:09-17:24

Turn to the person next to you and say, "I need you sometimes." And all the prideful people said, "I don't need that guy." But I saw a lot of very humble people say, "I need you.

    17:24-17:25

    I need you sometimes.

    17:25-17:28

    I do." So seek assistance.

    17:28-17:30

    Also seek forgiveness from others.

    17:31-17:36

I would say that you need others, and you need to value others.

    17:41-17:48

Certainly, active humility, you should constantly be engaged in this prayer, constantly acknowledging your dependence on God.

    17:49-17:50

    Prayer.

    17:53-17:55

Like, "Pastor Jeff, how do I know if I'm humble?

    17:55-18:05

How do I know if I'm humble?" I would just say, "Well, what's your prayer life like?" If you can walk through life thinking you don't need to pray, you don't need God, that's a sign of pride.

    18:06-18:08

If you're like, "Man, I've got to be on my face before God.

    18:08-18:12

I need Him." That's a sign of humility.

    18:15-18:23

Like John the Baptist, you know, just to put a bow on all of these things, how to humble yourself like John the Baptist, I would say focus on the greatness of Jesus.

    18:23-18:37

The more you're in His Word, the more you're worshiping Him and focusing on the majesty the awesomeness of Jesus Christ, kind of puts you in your place, like it did to John the Baptist.

    18:38-18:40

So, "The king is announced, exalt him.

    18:40-18:46

Secondly, the king is affirmed, embrace him." The king is affirmed, embrace him.

    18:50-19:00

Okay, Mark continues, Mr. Economy of Words says, "In those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.

    19:03-19:04

    Like Jesus just showed up.

    19:06-19:21

Like, "Well, what about the, what about the, you know, there was no room for them in the inn, and what about the cattle were lowing and the angels showed up and the shepherds and the magi?" And Mark's like, "Yeah, somebody else can tell that story." Mark, where are you going to start your story about Jesus?

    19:22-19:23

How about he just showed up?

    19:23-19:24

    How about that?

    19:26-19:28

How about this, he came from Nazareth of Galilee to get baptized.

    19:28-19:30

That's where I'm starting my story.

    19:30-19:33

I'm starting my account with Jesus at his baptism.

    19:36-19:39

Alright, he was inspired by the Holy Spirit like the others.

    19:41-19:44

Actually I've come to really appreciate people that get straight to the point.

    19:45-19:51

So 30 year old Jesus just shows up, no birth story, no background, boom.

    19:53-19:57

It says, "And was baptized by John in the Jordan." Now why was Jesus baptized?

    19:58-20:09

Now, okay, so like the Old Testament Gentile to embracing Judaism, full body, like immersion, cleansing, baptism, I get that.

    20:11-20:14

And Jesus in the Great Commission told us to go make disciples baptized.

    20:16-20:26

That is a picture of identifying with the death of Jesus and coming out of the water to identify with being raised in the newness of life.

    20:27-20:34

Okay, I get that, but why was Jesus baptized?

    20:35-20:38

It wasn't like He was a sinner and He needed to repent.

    20:40-20:42

It wasn't like He was a Gentile converting to Judaism.

    20:44-20:46

Actually, Matthew chapter 3 gives the answer.

    20:47-20:54

Jesus just simply said this, "It was to fulfill all righteousness." John the Baptist totally didn't want to baptize him.

    20:54-21:00

Jesus is like, "Baptize me." John's like, "I'm not worthy of that at all.

    21:00-21:02

I'm not even worthy to take your shoes off.

    21:02-21:21

I'm certainly not worthy to baptize you." Jesus said, "You have to baptize me." John's like, "No, I'm really not wanting to do that." Jesus said, "This is to fulfill all righteousness." like, "Well, what does that mean?" What that means is just simply this, Jesus was just doing what His heavenly Father required.

    21:22-21:22

    That's all that means.

    21:24-21:34

Jesus said, "I'm doing this because the Father said to." Now while you're doing your thing through the week, I'm doing my thing, and I'm studying God's Word, and I've seen all these reasons.

    21:34-21:44

People are, "Well, he had to be baptized by this, and here's the reason this, and here's the reason that." I'm just going to go with the reason that Jesus himself gave, like all in favor of that.

    21:44-21:46

How about the reason Jesus gave?

    21:46-21:50

And the reason Jesus gave was this, I'm doing it because the Father told me to do it.

    21:52-21:56

And I would ask you church, is that enough?

    21:57-21:58

    Is that enough?

    22:01-22:08

Is it enough for you to do things in your life just because God told you to do it?

    22:08-22:09

    Is that enough for you?

    22:10-22:16

Is it enough for you to say, "You know, I don't really feel like doing this, but the Bible says I should do it, so I'm just going to do it." Is that enough for you?

    22:19-22:19

    Well, it was for Jesus.

    22:21-22:24

Jesus didn't have any sin He had to deal with.

    22:25-22:29

He's like, "I'm doing this because the Father said to." It's to fulfill all righteousness.

    22:33-22:54

Verse 10 says, "When he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove." Pause here for a second.

    22:54-22:58

The Holy Spirit is not a dove, okay?

    22:58-23:04

Because it says that the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove, right?

    23:04-23:06

    Do you understand that picture?

    23:08-23:18

Mark isn't saying the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a hawk, like you know, Jesus comes out of the water, it's like, "Ahhhh!" Like boom!

    23:18-23:19

And like the Holy Spirit's like, "Pull him!

    23:20-23:31

On him!" like a hawk. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove. How does a dove descend?

    23:33-23:42

Lightly, delicately, gently. That's the picture, okay? So I know we've all seen the paintings where like Jesus is coming out of the water and you see the giant white bird in the sky.

    23:43-24:01

The Holy Spirit is not a dove, okay? He is God. He descended, he somehow physically manifested himself and descended upon Jesus lightly and rested upon him like a dove.

    24:03-24:06

    And this inaugurated Jesus' ministry.

    24:08-24:15

You know, it's October now, and you know what that means.

    24:20-24:24

That means it's Peyton Manning commercial season.

    24:26-24:26

    Right?

    24:29-24:31

Is there anything that Peyton Manning doesn't endorse?

    24:32-24:34

Seriously, he's got--what does Peyton Manning endorse?

    24:37-24:38

    Papa John's, right?

    24:38-24:40

And he's got a thing with the cameras, right?

    24:41-24:42

    And what's that?

    24:43-24:44

    Oreos?

    24:45-24:46

    Okay, what else?

    24:48-24:49

    Yeah, that's right.

    24:49-25:08

Buick. Yeah, Peyton Manning drives a Buick. Shocked me too. I didn't know. It's good enough for Shaq, I suppose. Okay, what else? I'm sure like, like birdseed, pudding, you know, wheelbarrows. I'm sure there are a lot of... Well, I'll tell you what, let's just...

    25:08-25:22

We don't got a lot of time. Let's just shout out the things that he doesn't endorse, right? Go ahead. Yeah, I couldn't think of any either. Well, why did they get Peyton Manning to do these endorsements? You know, I was thinking about this this week.

    25:22-26:07

You know, you get Peyton Manning to endorse everything. I'm like, "Okay, so he's a really good football player, but what does he know about Buicks, really? Or what does he know about Papa John's? Do you think he really eats Papa John's, Justin? I don't think he eats a lot of Papa John's, okay, especially this time of year. Why do they get him? Because His celebrity somehow put some kind of a special stamp of authenticity on whatever he's trying to endorse. And he's not the only one. You know, you can listen to celebrity endorsements and political rants from celebrities, and all of a sudden the whole world cares what Matt Damon and Madonna think about politics.

    26:08-26:57

and well, Jesus had two endorsements. He had John the Baptist and he had God the Father. Look at verse 11. Here's Jesus' endorsement, "And a voice came from heaven. You are my beloved Son. With you I am well pleased." Notice that God endorsed Jesus Christ, God the Father endorsed God the Son. It seems that endorsement was really aimed at an audience of one, wasn't it? That seems to me to be directed just simply at Jesus himself, right?

    27:00-27:06

And I would say to you, what you think about Jesus Christ is the most important thing about you.

    27:07-27:17

And if you're driving in your car singing, "Jesus is just alright with me," let me lovingly tell you that that opinion needs an overhaul.

    27:19-27:21

Because Jesus isn't just some religious figure.

    27:22-27:24

He's God Almighty who deserves total allegiance.

    27:26-27:33

And biblically, allegiance to Jesus Christ is demonstrated in Christian baptism.

    27:37-27:44

And every time we mention baptism, there are always a couple people, not just here but anywhere, there's always a couple people sitting there saying, "You know what?

    27:44-27:48

I haven't been baptized yet, but I don't really need to get baptized.

    27:48-27:49

    I mean, I've been a Christian for a while.

    27:49-28:02

I don't really need to get baptized." Well, God the Father said that when you receive Jesus Christ -- actually Jesus Himself said this too -- that when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you should get baptized.

    28:04-28:14

And if Jesus did it just because the Father said to do it, even though He never sinned, then what's your excuse?

    28:17-28:23

We're planning another baptism service with Northway, and that should be coming up this November.

    28:24-28:38

And if you haven't taken that step of obedience, if you haven't made the public profession of faith of identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, if you have not done that, then you need to get a hold of me.

    28:39-28:41

See me after service today or email me.

    28:42-28:45

My email is right there in the bulletin, but we need to talk about that.

    28:48-28:55

So the King has affirmed, "Embrace Him." And when you embrace Jesus Christ, that doesn't just mean you have cozy feelings about Him.

    28:55-28:58

That means Jesus Christ is my Lord.

    28:59-29:00

    Jesus Christ is my life.

    29:00-29:02

    Jesus Christ is my light.

    29:03-29:06

Jesus Christ is everything to me.

    29:12-29:13

He's affirmed by God the Father.

    29:16-29:17

    Embrace Him as your Lord.

    29:17-29:19

And thirdly, finally, the King is accomplished.

    29:21-29:22

    Join Him.

    29:26-29:28

Okay, do you have this scene in your mind?

    29:29-29:49

Jesus comes to get baptized, He's immersed, He comes out, the heavens are torn open, and the Spirit of God comes upon Him, and a voice from heaven saying, "You are my Son, you are my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." Do you have that scene?

    29:50-29:59

Well, look at verse 12, "The Spirit immediately drove Him out into the wilderness." The Spirit did what?

    30:02-30:07

But God, but Father, I thought you loved him.

    30:09-30:11

    Father, I don't get this.

    30:11-30:22

Father, you just said that you love him, and the first thing that you do after professing your love for him is driving him out into the wilderness?

    30:23-30:24

    Why would you do that?

    30:26-30:29

Well, God's love is not a pampering love.

    30:29-30:31

God's love is a perfecting love.

    30:36-30:41

Please hear this, because there are people sitting here right now that need this.

    30:41-30:45

God's purposes will rarely take you down easy streets.

    30:49-30:55

God's purposes will rarely take you down easy street.

    30:55-31:01

And when I say rarely, I mean maybe once out of a billion times it will.

    31:04-31:05

    By far the majority.

    31:06-31:13

When God is doing something in your life, many times it doesn't look pleasant from our perspective.

    31:13-31:15

    It just doesn't look pleasant.

    31:20-31:23

His purposes rarely take you down easy streets.

    31:26-31:33

You're like, "But I thought God loved me." God had a love relationship with His Son, the likes of which nothing else exists, right?

    31:34-31:38

But as soon as He was baptized, He was driven out into the wilderness for what purpose?

    31:40-31:54

Well, look at verse 13, it says, "And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan." And he was with the wild animals and the angels were ministering to him.

    31:57-32:00

He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan.

    32:03-32:06

When you're being tempted, how long do you normally last?

    32:09-32:16

There are some of us that think if we resist temptation for a day, we feel like the king of the universe, right?

    32:18-32:36

If we resist temptation for two or three days, we feel like, "I got this." Jesus Christ resisted temptation directly from the devil himself for forty days.

    32:39-32:41

Why did he have to go down this path?

    32:41-32:48

Well, so far in our account, you have John the Baptist announcing Him, you've got the Father affirming Him, and it's all well and good.

    32:48-32:53

But as Jesus prepared for ministry, here's the question that really needs answered.

    32:54-32:56

Does the man match the hype?

    32:57-33:00

Does Jesus Christ deliver as advertised?

    33:00-33:04

I mean, He certainly has the endorsements, but in reality, can He live up to them?

    33:06-33:07

    What about the practical results?

    33:07-33:09

What about the heart of the matter?

    33:09-33:10

    Can He defeat Satan?

    33:13-33:21

And before Jesus went out to preach a single word, which we'll get to next week, He had to go through this critical trial.

    33:22-33:22

    Why?

    33:27-33:38

Well, way back in Genesis chapter 3, the first Adam faced Satan, and he failed.

    33:42-33:50

showed up with some line of bologna that, "Yeah, if you eat that fruit, you'll be like God.

    33:50-33:52

    God's holding out on you.

    33:52-33:53

    Oh, you know what?

    33:53-33:55

You know why God doesn't want you to eat off that tree?

    33:55-34:00

Because God knows you'll be like Him, and God's a bit of a glory hog.

    34:00-34:03

God knows." That's what Satan was saying.

    34:03-34:08

He was in the face of the first Adam.

    34:09-34:11

You know what the result of that was?

    34:14-34:19

Adam's failure, Adam's sin brought sin and death into the world.

    34:23-34:25

That's why life is hard sometimes.

    34:25-34:25

    You know that, right?

    34:26-34:42

We are fallen people living in a fallen and cursed world, and every one of us are dying and decaying, because the first Adam, the devil brought his temptation and he failed.

    34:45-34:48

But do you know the Bible calls Jesus Christ the second Adam?

    34:48-34:48

    Did you know that?

    34:51-34:55

The second Adam also had to face Satan's temptation.

    34:57-34:58

    Well what happened?

    34:59-35:07

But did you notice Mark doesn't explicitly say what happens, but we know for a fact that Jesus overcame.

    35:09-35:11

You're like, "Yeah, you can read about it in the other Gospels, right?

    35:11-35:26

Like Luke 3, Matthew 4, you can read about it even aside from those." You know that Jesus overcame Satan's temptation because otherwise the gospel story would have ended there, right?

    35:27-35:31

I mean what kind of king would Jesus be if He couldn't defeat the enemy?

    35:33-35:35

But instead, you know the kind of king we have?

    35:36-35:50

Hebrews 4.15 says, "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

    35:53-36:07

Jesus Christ, not just here but throughout His life and ministry, was tempted in every single way that you and I are, but He was without sin.

    36:11-36:13

And we can't underscore the significance of that enough.

    36:14-36:17

You see, you inherited sin from the first Adam's failure.

    36:18-36:22

You can inherit victory from the second Adam's victory.

    36:23-36:27

You inherited death from the first Adam's failure.

    36:27-36:33

You inherit eternal life through the second Adam's victory.

    36:35-36:36

Jesus had to go through this trial.

    36:39-36:59

he was going to prove that he wasn't just hype, he wasn't just some detached deity in the form of a man who can't identify, who can't be a part of this human race really because he's untouched by the things that touch us.

    37:00-37:16

No, He immersed Himself into this world to the point that He was tempted at every point, even directly face-to-face by Satan himself.

    37:20-37:22

    But this Adam was victorious.

    37:23-37:24

Do you know what that reminds me of?

    37:24-37:28

That reminds me of one of my favorite stories, one of my favorite sports stories.

    37:28-37:37

actually a basketball story. How many people remember Stacey King? Do you remember Stacey King, famous NBA player? How many people have heard of Stacey King?

    37:37-37:53

Okay, one. Is that it? One? Stacey King played for the Chicago Bulls. Back in the day that there was a another player on the Bulls that was a little more famous.

    37:53-38:24

How many of you have ever heard of Michael Jordan? I love this story. One game, they put Stacey King in. He made one free throw. That was his contribution. One free throw, racking up how many points? One. In that game, Michael Michael Jordan himself racked up 69 points by himself.

    38:26-38:51

Well, after the final buzzer, a reporter went to King for his post-game wrap-up, and King said, "I'll always remember this as the night that Michael Jordan and I combined for 70 points." story, because that's like the gospel.

    38:53-38:58

Don't walk around like Satan won the battle, because he's defeated.

    38:59-39:08

Jesus Christ is victorious over sin, and Jesus' victory can be your victory if you've humbled yourself and received Him.

    39:10-39:11

    So this is the gospel.

    39:13-39:16

This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

    39:18-39:26

The King has arrived, and He's arrived to bring you into a new era.

    39:29-39:35

So exalt Him, embrace Him, and join Him.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 1:1-13

Mark 1:7 shows John the Baptist’s humility. Rate yourself in these categories 1 to 10.

  • 1 = “I am so prideful in this area. I haven’t humbled myself at all!”

  • 10 = “I am so humble in this area, I have zero pride issues here. I am a regular Moses.” (I don’t imagine many 10s on a humility test, but if it’s true, it’s true!)

  1. I am serious about my sin. I regularly deal with it with God and confess it to others. I admit my weaknesses.

  2. I submit to authority. I know who my authority is, and I joyfully submit at work, at church, in my home.”

  3. I serve others, putting their needs ahead of my own.

  4. I seek assistance and forgiveness from others.

Breakout Questions:

Pray for each other in the areas you struggle in humility.

What kind of a church is this? That's the question that we have been seeking to answer all through the month of September. What kind of a church is this?

    00:11-00:28

Quick review. What is the mission of Harvest Bible Chapel? If you know it, go ahead and shout it out. To make disciples, right. That's the short version. To make disciples. Everything we do at this church is to make disciples. And like Like where did we come up with that?

    00:29-00:31

    Well, from Jesus, right?

    00:32-00:38

The Bible says that Jesus gave us the Great Commission to go and to make disciples.

    00:39-00:44

So our mission is to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    00:45-00:46

    We want to make disciples.

    00:46-00:48

That's the mission of this church.

    00:50-00:52

And Harvest Bible Chapel is built on four pillars.

    00:52-01:05

The first pillar, remember way back September 8th we talked about the first pillar, is is, shout it out, don't be shy, yes, proclaiming the authority of God's word without apology.

    01:06-02:52

We believe that God wrote a book, so when we get up to, whether it's the worship songs that we sing, all of that content comes from the truth of God's word. When we get up to speak, all of the content of the sermons comes from the word of God. So we want to proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology. Our second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus through worship. Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4 that the Father was seeking worshipers. God was seeking people who would worship him in spirit and in truth. In truth, according to God's Word, but in spirit with everything that's in us. Worship is to be a mental and an emotional endeavor. Truth and spirit. And then the third pillar we talked about last week was what? Believing firmly in the power of prayer. Anybody praying big things this week, praise the Lord. He can handle it, right? He loves you. He loves you and he wants to hear from you and he has the power to meet anything that you need. So we believe firmly in the power of prayer. And today we're going to talk about, as we close this series and we get ready for our anniversary ministry off next week. We can't do it without talking about the fourth pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    02:53-03:21

And does anybody know it? I don't have my sign up here today, but does anybody know it? This is like bonus on the test. Yes, sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness. That Sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    03:24-03:27

To kind of set the table here, I want you to imagine a scenario with me.

    03:27-03:28

    Can you do that?

    03:29-03:31

I want you to imagine a scenario with me.

    03:32-03:38

I want you to imagine that you're walking somewhere in town with a friend of yours.

    03:42-03:45

And we'll just call that friend Joe.

    03:45-03:46

We'll just call him Joe, okay?

    03:47-03:48

    All in favor of Joe?

    03:48-03:49

    All right, that works.

    03:50-03:55

So you're walking, you and, let's say you and Joe were just hanging out for a little bit.

    03:56-04:01

If you're a woman and you're married and your husband's not named Joe, pick another name.

    04:03-04:03

    All right?

    04:06-04:23

But you've been with your friend Joe and you guys were just hanging out and you're walking through the street when all of the sudden coming over the hill is a bus that has lost control.

    04:25-04:29

Well, you don't see it, actually, but Joe sees it.

    04:30-04:30

    Everybody with me?

    04:32-04:40

You don't see what's happening, but Joe sees this bus is coming and it's heading right for you and you are completely oblivious to what's coming.

    04:43-04:50

And Joe jumps in front of you, shoves you out of the way, and gets hit by the bus head on.

    04:52-04:54

Are you with me in this scenario?

    04:55-06:14

And Joe's laying there in the street and the bus crashes to a halt and you get on your cell phone and you call the ambulance and here come the paramedics and you race to the hospital and they rush Joe back and they have him all hooked up to you know every IV and everything they can do to get some response from Joe and you're sitting in the waiting room. Are you with me? You're sitting in the waiting room and the doctor comes out and says, "He didn't make it. I'm so sorry." And you stand up from your seat in the waiting room and you say, "Well, that sure was nice what he did for me, I wonder what's for lunch." Right? Is that how the story goes? Would you do that? You know what's sad though? That happens every Sunday, doesn't it?

    06:16-06:59

People can come, and we can sing, and we can talk about, "God became a man." And it wasn't just a matter of getting hit by a bus. He was nailed to a cross bearing the wrath of God on himself, hung in public shame and humiliation and the spiritual and physical pain that the God/Man Jesus Christ endured for my sin and for your sin, and we can come and we can remember that, and we can sort of walk away unaffected by that.

    07:01-07:04

We can sort of walk away from church saying, "Well, that was really nice of Jesus.

    07:04-07:12

I wonder what's for lunch." Well, getting back to our scenario with our friend Joe, what would you really do?

    07:13-07:16

I'll tell you what you'd do if that really happened.

    07:17-07:18

Joe pushes you out, he gets hit by the bus.

    07:19-07:26

You know for the rest of your life that the only reason you're still walking on the earth is this man gave his life for you.

    07:26-07:32

You would tell everyone that sat still for more than seven seconds what this guy did for you, wouldn't you?

    07:33-07:45

You would start websites for Joe, and you'd start a Facebook fan page for Joe, and you would have fundraisers for Joe, and you would take every opportunity to honor his memory.

    07:50-07:52

Let me tell you something else.

    07:52-07:54

This is actually what you wouldn't do.

    07:54-07:58

You wouldn't tolerate any negative speech about Joe, would you?

    07:58-07:59

    Put yourself in that scenario.

    07:59-08:05

Imagine you're with some other friends, and they're like, "Yeah, Bob, you remember Joe?

    08:05-08:06

"Boy, was he a self-centered jerk.

    08:06-08:21

"What would you say?" You'd be like, "You don't know what you're talking about, man, that guy gave his life for me. Shut your pie hole, okay? You don't know what you're talking about. I'm not going to sit here and listen to you talk about him like that. You wouldn't tolerate it, would you? You wouldn't tolerate it.

    08:26-08:35

My question, church, is this, how can we do or say any less for Jesus Christ?

    08:40-08:44

How can we not talk about Him?

    08:47-08:51

How can we tolerate when people speak ill of Jesus?

    08:55-09:11

That's why today we're going to be talking about why this is a pillar in our church, and this is as important to us as everything else we do because this is our mission, sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    09:13-09:19

Well to keep it consistent in the series, once again, let's talk about some fails, right?

    09:22-09:27

As I've been telling you, Justin Cady keeps me up to date on what the hip kids are saying.

    09:29-09:38

And one of the things the hip kids say now, when somebody attempts something that doesn't work out with the desired response, they say, "Fail." Well these are some witness fails.

    09:44-09:46

I'm going to count backwards from four here.

    09:48-09:52

These are just some things that I hear people say like, why they're hesitant to witness.

    09:54-09:55

    Why they're hesitant to witness.

    09:57-10:00

Number four, what if they ask a question I don't know the answer to?

    10:01-10:02

I've heard that one a lot.

    10:02-10:06

Well, I'd like to witness to people, but what if they ask a question that I don't know the answer to?

    10:17-10:20

My answer to that is just simply this.

    10:21-10:27

If somebody asks you a question you don't know the answer to, you say, that is a really good question, can I get back to you on that?

    10:28-10:29

    Problem solved, right?

    10:31-10:35

My friend Mark is here, we spent some time in prison together, didn't we Mark?

    10:36-10:37

    Prison ministry together.

    10:37-10:39

I see some eyebrows going up.

    10:40-10:41

    Prison ministry.

    10:41-10:42

That happened to me a lot in the prison.

    10:43-10:47

We'd have guys come in and they'd ask a question and I'd be like, oh gosh man, That's a really good question.

    10:47-10:52

Let me write that down and come back to Bible study next week and we'll talk about it.

    10:52-10:55

And yeah, not a big deal.

    10:57-10:58

There's only one person that has all the answers.

    11:00-11:03

What if they ask a question I don't know the answer to?

    11:03-11:03

    That's okay.

    11:05-11:06

Just tell me to get back to them on that.

    11:07-11:08

    Number three, here's a fail.

    11:08-11:11

Well, I don't witness because I really don't know enough to share.

    11:12-11:14

I really don't know enough to share.

    11:14-11:17

I don't even know what I'd say because I really don't know enough to share.

    11:18-11:24

Well, I have a bigger concern because if you don't know enough to share, then I have to wonder if you know enough to be saved in the first place, really.

    11:25-11:29

And I'm not saying that in a condemning way or a judgmental way, I'm just saying that, let's be brutally honest.

    11:30-11:35

If you don't know enough about Jesus to talk about Jesus, then I have to ask you, do you know Jesus?

    11:35-11:39

Do you know enough about Jesus that you've come into a saving relationship with Him?

    11:42-11:43

    Share what you know, right?

    11:44-11:46

share what you know. We'll talk about that more in a few minutes.

    11:47-11:53

    Number two, here's a big fail. That's the preacher's job. That's the preacher's job.

    11:56-14:08

You know, I work on cars, or I work at a restaurant, or I am a physician's assistant, or it's the preacher's job to do the preachery things. Well, that's a fail, because the truth is you're going to encounter people that I will never meet. You will. You will encounter people just in your day-to-day, through your family, through your friends, through your workplace, through the places that you frequent. You're going to encounter people that I will never meet. The truth is, if you're a follower of of Jesus Christ, you're His witness. So it's not just a preacher's job. And you know the number one hesitancy, right? Number one is just simply this, "What if people reject me? What if people reject me?" That seems to be number one because nobody likes rejection. Nobody wants to be the kid that doesn't get picked for a kickball team like that was always me, and nobody wants to be rejected. But to that I would simply say this, look in your Bible at people like Stephen and James and Paul and Jesus. All people who were beaten, ridiculed, and killed for doing nothing more than speaking the truth. So what makes you think that everyone is going to love you for it? The most harmless person who ever lived was Jesus Christ, and simply for speaking God's truth, he was crucified. We know that was part of God's plan to purchase our redemption, but when you look at that from an earthly perspective and take these other ones into consideration, you You can certainly come to this conclusion, many times speaking God's truth is not popular, and many times people will hate those who speak for God for no other reason than the fact that they speak for God.

    14:10-14:11

All right, so let's get those off the table.

    14:12-14:16

Let's see what the Bible says about our witness, and I want you to turn to 2 Corinthians chapter 2.

    14:17-14:19

Turn to 2 Corinthians chapter 2.

    14:19-14:22

We're just going to look at a few verses here.

    14:26-14:28

    Second Corinthians chapter 2.

    14:30-14:32

We're going to be looking at verses 14 through 17.

    14:41-14:44

Number one on your outline, and I encourage you to take notes, number one is this.

    14:45-14:47

This is one of the most profound things.

    14:49-14:56

This is one of the deepest theological things that honestly I don't understand.

    14:58-15:02

I believe it, and I embrace it, but I don't fully understand it.

    15:02-15:03

    But write this down.

    15:03-15:07

Number one, God speaks the good news of the gospel through people.

    15:13-15:16

God speaks the good news of the gospel through people.

    15:18-15:43

Look at verse 14, it says, "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere." Let's stop there.

    15:44-16:15

in your Bible the words "through us." "Through us." God chooses -- look at the verse -- He chooses to spread the fragrance of the knowledge of Jesus. He chooses to make His Son known through us. And here's why that blows my mind, it's just simply He doesn't have to do that, right?

    16:18-16:22

Could God choose any other way to spread the gospel?

    16:24-16:24

    Think about it.

    16:25-16:30

God could write the gospel of Jesus Christ on the sky, couldn't He?

    16:34-16:38

God could write the gospel of Jesus Christ on every blade of grass.

    16:41-16:51

God could drop a sheet from heaven that hangs in everybody's view no matter where they are that has the gospel of Jesus Christ on, but for some reason He doesn't do that.

    16:55-17:04

What He chooses to do instead is to make His gospel known through you.

    17:08-17:10

And that just utterly confounds me.

    17:12-17:22

The eternal gospel, the message of life and death, the message of heaven and hell, the message that affects everyone's eternity.

    17:25-17:30

And God has entrusted that message to you.

    17:37-17:44

2 Corinthians 5.20 says we are ambassadors for Christ.

    17:45-17:48

This is a verse that the Lord has tattooed on my brain.

    17:50-18:00

Everywhere I go, everywhere I am, the people that I encounter, the conversations I have, I am representing Jesus Christ to people.

    18:06-18:35

I had a man come up to me many, many years ago, and not a believer, but I had shared some things with him, and he came up to me, he goes, "Man, you are, you are Jesus to me." And I'm like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa." I was like, "Dude, like, don't even make that comparison." And I shared a little more with him, but after that exchange, I walked away from that going, Biblically, I am Jesus to him.

    18:36-18:37

    I'm not Jesus, okay?

    18:37-18:41

Don't make a beeline for the door, Pastor Jeff's gone off the deep end.

    18:42-18:44

But understand what the Bible says.

    18:44-18:49

You represent Jesus to somebody because you're his ambassador.

    18:50-18:52

People are looking to you, "What's Jesus like?

    18:52-18:53

    What's the gospel like?

    18:54-19:03

How does Jesus Christ change a person?" We're looking to you for the example of that, because you're His ambassador.

    19:04-19:05

    You represent Jesus.

    19:06-19:07

    And you know what?

    19:09-19:11

We can have theological discussions all you want.

    19:11-19:13

You can marvel at the Trinity.

    19:13-19:16

How is God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at the same time?

    19:17-19:18

    You can marvel at that.

    19:18-19:23

You can marvel at the fact that God created everything just by speaking it into existence.

    19:24-19:27

You can marvel at the sovereignty of God.

    19:27-19:36

You can marvel that He has every single little minute detail in the universe under His absolute complete control.

    19:36-19:39

You can marvel at those things, but do you know what I marvel at?

    19:39-19:41

I marvel that God loves me.

    19:43-19:46

And I marvel that God wants me to speak for Him.

    19:49-19:52

So the question is, what kind of witnesses are we?

    19:56-19:59

    Well, there's five descriptive words.

    20:00-20:01

What kind of witnesses are we, first of all?

    20:02-20:03

Letter A, we are victorious witnesses.

    20:05-20:06

    We are victorious witnesses.

    20:09-20:42

It says, "But thanks be to God who in Christ always leads us in the triumphal procession and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere, for we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life." Let's pause there.

    20:43-20:46

    We are victorious witnesses.

    20:48-20:50

I'm sure it caught your eye.

    20:50-20:53

What's this procession that he's talking about in verse 14?

    20:53-20:57

Well, Paul was actually using an illustration from his own day.

    21:00-21:05

When a Roman general would win a battle, they would have a parade.

    21:07-21:29

And at this parade, they would burn incense, and flowers would be thrown on the streets that as the horses walked through the streets and stomped on the flowers, between that and the incense that was burnt, it would give up this fragrance, that the whole town would smell like victory.

    21:33-21:41

And Paul was using that as an illustration to say, "Christ," did you notice what he said?

    21:41-21:44

He is always leading us in the victory parade.

    21:45-21:46

    Don't misunderstand.

    21:46-21:48

Read the Bible for what it says, okay?

    21:48-21:50

Read the Bible for what it says.

    21:50-21:53

Jesus is always leading this victory parade.

    21:54-21:59

That's why in my Bible I have the word "always circled." True or false question?

    22:01-22:01

    You ready?

    22:01-22:02

    True or false?

    22:06-22:14

Fear is when somebody rejects the gospel of Jesus Christ, and victory is when somebody receives the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    22:15-22:16

    True or false?

    22:17-22:22

Actually that statement is false, because here's what this verse is saying.

    22:22-22:27

When you speak for Jesus, God is glorified despite the response.

    22:27-22:28

    Did you see that?

    22:28-22:28

    Look again.

    22:29-22:32

God is glorified despite the response.

    22:33-22:43

God is glorified in the fragrance of Christ being out there, despite the fact that some people love the smell and some people don't.

    22:43-22:43

    Look again.

    22:44-22:47

He says Jesus always leads us in triumphal procession.

    22:48-22:50

Through us he's spreading the fragrance.

    22:53-22:59

Then he says, verse 15, "We're the aroma of Christ to God." That could be like a whole other sermon.

    22:59-23:00

    To God.

    23:01-23:18

smell like Christ to God. Isn't that awesome? Everybody say, "That's another sermon, Pastor Jeff." Come on, help me out. Everybody say, "Move on." Okay, I will.

    23:19-23:34

All right. He says, "Among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death and to the other a fragrance from life to life. This is profound.

    23:41-24:26

But when you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, the Bible says you smell like Jesus. You smell like Jesus. To some people, you smell like life. Oh, I just love being around them. I just love being around them. They are such an encouragement to me, and I just love that. That's true Christian fellowship, you smell like life. But to some people you stink like death. It's the same smell. It's the same smell.

    24:33-24:38

But you have to notice from this verse that results don't determine victory.

    24:38-24:42

victory, Jesus is already victorious, and we're already in the parade.

    24:44-24:45

    Do you see that?

    24:45-24:46

    Results don't determine.

    24:48-24:53

If you smell like death to some, then that's a fail, but if you smell like life to some, that's victory.

    24:53-24:54

That is not what that says.

    24:55-25:00

It says the victory is the fact that the gospel of Jesus Christ is getting out there.

    25:01-25:19

The victory is the fact that you smell like Jesus, and that's why you're always in this parade, and this is encouraging to me because I know when I witness to someone, I don't have to walk away from that going, "Was that a success or a fail?" It's always a success because I was making Christ known, right?

    25:19-25:20

    It's always a success.

    25:21-25:24

"But Pastor Jeff, what if they don't like you?" That's success.

    25:25-25:28

"But Pastor Jeff, what if they punch you in the nose?" That's success.

    25:29-25:35

"Pastor Jeff, what if they kill you?" That's success because the success is in the fact that Christ has been made known.

    25:37-25:39

I'm just privileged to be a part of the parade.

    25:41-25:45

Jesus Victory Parade, what an honor.

    25:47-25:48

    So we are victorious witnesses.

    25:50-25:53

Listen, faithfulness isn't determined by results, right?

    25:53-25:54

    Ask Noah.

    25:56-26:00

Noah preached for 120 years, and at the end of the day only eight people got on the ark.

    26:02-26:03

    Was Noah a failure?

    26:07-26:10

You see the successes in making Christ known.

    26:13-26:17

So number two in letter B actually, letter B, we are dependent witnesses.

    26:18-26:19

    Look at verse 16 again.

    26:20-26:21

    We are dependent witnesses.

    26:22-26:27

Paul says, "Who is sufficient for these things?" Who is sufficient for these things?

    26:31-26:35

This is a question that I ask myself weekly.

    26:39-26:43

Actually every Sunday afternoon, every Monday.

    26:49-26:52

If you can find enough honest preachers, you'll find a consensus.

    26:53-27:00

That Sunday afternoons and Mondays can be rough because you always feel like you didn't adequately express the grandeur of God's word like it deserved.

    27:03-27:05

Preachers wrestle with that, okay, a little insight.

    27:05-27:08

You wrestle with things in your job, let me tell you some things we wrestle with.

    27:09-27:18

Every week I get up and say this is what God said, and every week I walk away going, I didn't adequately express how awesome God is this week.

    27:18-27:25

I didn't adequately express how amazing his love and his grace truly is.

    27:26-27:41

I didn't adequately express what life in Christ is, what a blessing that is, and that's why Paul says, you know, when we're talking about making Christ known, who is sufficient for these things?

    27:43-27:54

And when I talk to people, now that's preacher talk, but let me tell you, when I talk to my brothers and sisters in Christ, this is what I always hear when it comes to witnessing.

    27:55-28:04

know I've been sharing things with my grandma or I've been sharing things with my cousin or I've been sharing things and I have to wonder, did I say the right thing?

    28:04-28:06

Anybody ever wrestle with that? Did I say the right thing?

    28:08-28:15

I've had this conversation, I've had this conversation with some people in this room and many times over the years this conversation, did I say the right thing?

    28:16-28:19

Pastor Jeff, I'm afraid maybe I didn;t share enough. Anybody ever feel like that?

    28:19-28:20

    I didn't share enough!

    28:24-28:52

people say, "Well, maybe Pastor Jeff, maybe I shared too much. Maybe I just dumped too much Bible on them, and instead of just explaining the cross and the empty tomb, I just gave them a systematic theology lesson, and I just feel like maybe I gave them too much." And And we all just kind of walk away going, "Who is sufficient for these things?" It's heavy.

    28:55-28:56

    Well, here's the bad news.

    28:58-29:01

There's not a person in this room that's sufficient in and of yourself.

    29:02-29:02

    You're not.

    29:02-29:03

    You're not sufficient.

    29:04-29:05

    Justin, you're not sufficient.

    29:05-29:07

I like you, man, but you're not sufficient.

    29:08-29:09

    You're not.

    29:09-29:10

    I'm not.

    29:12-29:13

But that's not really bad news.

    29:13-29:23

actually good news because if you look down a few verses in chapter 3 and verse 5, look what Paul says, "Not that we are sufficient in ourselves." Not that we are sufficient in ourselves.

    29:27-29:30

To claim anything as coming from us.

    29:30-29:32

    Oh, so I'm not alone.

    29:33-29:35

Paul was like totally dealing with this too.

    29:35-29:38

Paul's like, "I'm not sufficient." But look at this next phrase.

    29:39-29:40

This should be underlined in your Bible too.

    29:41-29:42

He says our sufficiency is from God.

    29:44-29:46

    Our sufficiency is from God.

    29:50-29:53

So I would like to tell you, church, simply this, you're dependent witnesses.

    29:53-29:54

    You're dependent.

    29:54-29:55

    You're dependent on God.

    29:56-30:00

Don't think that you're going out there to change the world for God without Him, okay?

    30:01-30:02

    You're not sufficient.

    30:05-30:05

    You're dependent.

    30:07-30:08

You're dependent on Him for all things.

    30:10-31:04

or see, jot this down, we are sincere witnesses. We are sincere witnesses. He says, "For we are not like so many, peddlers of God's Word." Peddlers. When you hear peddler, what do you think of? What's that? I know, I just didn't want to repeat it. Does anybody here sell cars? That's kind of a stereotype, isn't it? I know we got our lawyer jokes and we got our used car salesman jokes and we got our preacher jokes and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, that's what a lot of people think of. You What's it going to take for me to get you in one of these?

    31:05-31:06

    This is your car.

    31:07-31:08

    Oh, this is your car.

    31:08-31:10

You were made for this car.

    31:10-31:11

    Look at it.

    31:11-31:13

That seat just contours right around you.

    31:14-31:15

You were made for this car.

    31:16-31:19

Peddlers, what else do you think of?

    31:20-31:20

You know what I think of.

    31:21-31:24

You know one of my weaknesses, one of my guilty pleasures, infomercials.

    31:25-31:27

When I think of peddlers, I think of the ShamWow guy.

    31:28-31:29

Do you know who I'm talking about?

    31:29-31:31

How many people have seen the ShamWow guy?

    31:32-31:35

Like, dude, you are way too excited about a towel, okay?

    31:38-31:47

But I mean, that guy is just like, you know, he's like, we got our orange towel here, and we dumped five gallons of soda, and it sucked it right up.

    31:47-31:51

I'm like, okay, that's kind of impressive, but you're smoking something, pal.

    31:53-31:53

    Peddlers.

    31:55-31:56

Well, that's why they do it.

    31:56-31:58

It's going so over the top.

    32:02-32:05

And sadly, there's a lot of peddlers on Christian television, right?

    32:06-32:12

There's a lot of peddlers on Christian television using the Word of God to make a buck.

    32:13-33:00

Using the Word of God for their own advantage and they just look so slick and they sound so loud and they make a buck. Enough of them. Look at the next phrase. He said, "We're not the peddlers." He goes, "But as men of sincerity." Sincerity. And you guys know we're coming up on two years. That's something we've been saying from the very beginning. Some of you have been with us from the very beginning, right, can, and that's something we have talked about from the very beginning. We want to be an authentic church. We want to be sincere. We don't want to play church.

    33:00-33:59

We're not here to put on a show. I'm not here to entertain you. We want to be sincere. We want to be authentic. God help us. I'm sure some of you, when you heard that the sermon was about witnessing today, you just kind of leaned over to somebody and you said, "Well, pack your bags. We're going on a guilt trip," and that's not the case at all. I am not going to guilt trip anyone here today because I don't think that's right. I think that there really can only be one motive for witnessing, one sincere motive, and that's just simply love. That's the motive. I could really guilt you into witnessing. I could give you a little talk that would make you go out and you'd be stuffing gospel tracts down people's throats. If you're not motivated by love though, what does it mean, right?

    34:01-34:12

If you're not motivated by "I do this because I love Jesus," if you're not motivated by "I do this because I love lost people," then it just doesn't matter.

    34:15-34:42

I read this week about a guy who when he was in Bible college he took this like evangelism class, and in order to get an A in the class he had to share the gospel with seven people a week during the tenure of this class. I remember being in school. What do you think that looked like? I don't know this guy, maybe Maybe he's different than me, but I can tell you how it would have been for me.

    34:43-34:54

Like, "Oh, my project's due tomorrow." I would have been racing to Walmart at like 11.45 and like running through the parking lot like, "Oh, by the way, here's a gospel track.

    34:54-34:58

Can I tell you about Jesus?" "No." "Okay, one." "Hey, here's a gospel track.

    34:58-35:03

Can I tell you about Jesus?" "Get lost, kid." "Two." And it would just be like a matter of keeping the checklist.

    35:05-35:10

And that's not proper motivation for sharing the gospel.

    35:10-35:13

It has to be because you love Jesus.

    35:16-35:18

And it has to be because you love lost people.

    35:22-35:24

Speaking of, let me ask you that.

    35:24-35:26

    Do you love lost people?

    35:27-35:28

    Do you love lost people?

    35:28-35:29

Do you know people are hungry?

    35:30-35:43

People are starving in their soul, And they've been stuffing themselves with sex and entertainment and drugs and alcohol, and what they find is they're still starving in their soul.

    35:45-35:46

    Does that bother you?

    35:46-35:47

    Do you care?

    35:53-37:01

You know, that neighbor of yours that doesn't know Christ, do you know that they are one breath away from eternal separation from God in a place called hell, does that bother you? Does that bother you? When you truly understand what Jesus has accomplished for you, when you truly love people the way Jesus loves people, and when you come to a reality check about the truth about hell, you're going to be witnessing and sharing as someone of sincerity. Sincere. Sincere. Do it out of love. Next phrase, letter D, we are commissioned witnesses. He says, "As commissioned by God, commissioned witnesses." That sort of cranks it up a little bit. So not only do we do it out of love and a right motive, but we do it because God told us to do it, right? You know the Great Commission, Jesus makes the most incredible statement on authority ever spoken.

    37:02-37:07

When Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Have you ever thought about that?

    37:09-37:15

Jesus said, "All authority." Everything, all authority.

    37:16-37:17

    Who's in charge of everything?

    37:18-37:19

    Jesus said He is.

    37:20-37:22

Like what about like what's happening in heaven?

    37:22-37:28

You think of all the angels and everything that's happening in the realm that we can't even see yet.

    37:29-37:30

Who has the authority over that?

    37:32-37:32

    Jesus does.

    37:33-37:35

Who has authority over everything that's happening on the earth?

    37:36-37:37

    Jesus does.

    37:37-37:45

Jesus was saying, "I am the CEO of everything." Now go make disciples.

    37:47-37:49

And that's why Paul here says, "We're commissioned.

    37:51-39:13

commissioned. God's given us a job to do. The CEO of the universe has given us a job. Let's go after that. You say, "Well, I know what you're saying about witnessing, but witnessing isn't really my thing." Well, you better make it your thing, because Jesus said, "Go make disciples." We're commissioned by God, and but you do have to represent Jesus to whomever God puts in your path. We're commissioned. Paul says it here, we're commissioned by God. He's given us a job, let's get on it, in love. And then finally, we are empowered witnesses. We are empowered witnesses. He says, "In the sight of God, we speak in Christ." When Jesus gave the Great Commission, he didn't say, "Go make disciples, teach them, baptize them, and I will check in occasionally to see how you're doing." He He did say, "I will be with you until the end of the age." Remind you that you are God's ministry partner.

    39:16-39:18

And that sort of takes the pressure off, doesn't it?

    39:18-39:19

All you need to do is tell the story.

    39:20-39:21

God does the heavy lifting, right?

    39:22-39:49

The Holy Spirit is the one who does the spiritual work, the work of regeneration, the work of conviction, the work of that heart stuff that you and I can't do. Our job is to just tell people the story. But we're empowered witnesses because we're doing this with God. So God has chosen to proclaim the gospel through people.

    39:52-40:03

Secondly, I want to talk about one word here, and that's the word "boldness." Write this down. God's people are called to speak the good news of the gospel boldly.

    40:06-40:41

Boldly. The way that it's worded on the pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel is sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness. Why is that phrase "with boldness in there? Well, the early church had one motive, or one method rather. One simple and powerful method, and it was boldness. You ready for a word study? The Greek word for boldness is translated 42 times in the New Testament, and it literally means openness.

    40:43-40:44

    It means speaking freely.

    40:46-40:51

It means clear, plain, and directly.

    40:51-41:01

When we talk about sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness, that doesn't mean you race home from church and go to your neighbor's house and start pounding on their door, "Hey, pagan, you're going to hell!

    41:03-41:04

    "Turn or burn!

    41:04-41:09

"Get right or get left!" All that stuff may be true, but that's obnoxious.

    41:10-41:12

    And that's not boldness.

    41:13-41:14

    So, what is boldness?

    41:15-41:18

Boldness just simply means clear, plain, and direct, open.

    41:19-41:30

A couple of examples, Mark chapter 8, verses 31 and 32, it says, "He, Jesus, began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed.

    41:31-41:36

And after three days rise again, and He said this plainly." That's the word for bold.

    41:37-41:38

It says Jesus said it plainly.

    41:38-41:45

Jesus didn't gather his disciples around and try to give them some sort of a cryptogram, some sort of a holy crossword.

    41:45-41:46

See if you can figure this out.

    41:47-41:48

    He spoke very plainly.

    41:48-41:55

"Listen, I'm going to die and I'm going to raise from the dead." Plain.

    41:58-42:01

Another example is Acts chapter 7, verses 25 through 26.

    42:01-43:15

"Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, 'Is this not the man whom they seek to kill, and here He is speaking openly. Openly, there it is again. That's boldness, just speaking openly. And then you see it in the church, Acts chapter 4, verses 13, 29, and 31, over and over and over and over. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, verse 29, "Grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness." Verse 31, continue to speak the Word of God with boldness. Boldness is not disregarding the willingness of the hearer. Boldness is this. Boldness is the Spirit-directed conviction that one must share the news clearly and not fear the response of the listener. Simply opportunity, I will speak for him." That's boldness. When God gives me opportunity, I'm going to speak for him. That's bold.

    43:18-43:34

It's not obnoxious, it's not jerky, it's actually very humble, but it's clear. As I Before I close my time, I wanted to share with you the vision for outreach at Harvest Bible Chapels.

    43:34-43:39

We talk about witnessing and we talk about getting out, sharing the gospel.

    43:41-43:43

I want you to jot these things down.

    43:45-43:47

What does this church do for outreach?

    43:50-43:51

    Well, there are three things.

    43:51-43:59

Number one, I know the screen's going to say invite, and I thought about that.

    43:59-44:00

    That's like a subheading.

    44:00-44:01

    Write down personal.

    44:03-44:06

Write down personal under number one, and invite's going to come under that, okay?

    44:07-44:09

Write down the word personal, number one.

    44:10-44:11

    How does outreach happen?

    44:11-44:12

    What happens with you personally?

    44:16-44:18

    It happens with you personally.

    44:19-44:22

I'd like to remind you again to share what you know. Just share what you know.

    44:30-46:05

It's just seeing who God's preparing that you can share the message with. Now like I said, I'm no Billy Graham. I'm not even a Teddy Graham. I'm just like some guy. And at the risk of sounding too simplistic, I mean, here's what I do when I meet people and talk to them. It's just like this. We get to talking and, you know, "It's really nice to meet you," and stuff. I say, "Do you know the story about Jesus?" And judging in their response determines what I say next. Sometimes people are like, "Oh yeah, I know the story about Jesus, and when they say that, I make sure they know the story about Jesus. Like, you know, let's do a little role-playing, right? Bob, you're up first. Do you know the story about Jesus? Now, I'm sorry, I didn't give you your role. Shame on me. Your answer is yes, okay? Do you know the story about Jesus? You know how the Bible says that He came, He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead so that you could have eternal life and your sins could be forgiven? You know that story? What have you done with that?" That's what I ask people. I just ask them, "What have you done with that?" I was witnessing to a guy a couple weeks ago, like I said, that very question, I said, "What have you done with that?" He said, "Nothing." And I said, "Not like jerky, I'm like sitting down with a guy, okay, so don't think I'm like, you know, beating him over the head.

    46:06-46:12

You know, we're just sitting down talking, all right? So You're gonna say yes and then you're gonna say nothing.

    46:12-46:12

    You got that?

    46:13-46:15

Okay, do you know the story about Jesus?

    46:15-46:18

How he died on the cross for you and he rose from the dead.

    46:18-46:19

Well, what have you done with that?

    46:21-46:23

Why haven't you done something with that?

    46:23-46:24

    Do you know?

    46:25-46:29

You know the Bible says that your eternity hinges on what you do with Jesus Christ.

    46:29-46:30

    Do you know that?

    46:31-46:32

    And this guy said yes.

    46:34-46:39

And I said, well then, I guess I just gotta ask you, what's the hangup?

    46:40-46:44

If you know, what are you doing about that?

    46:44-46:59

And we got to talking, and through the conversation, and you're a good sport, Bob, but through the conversation, this man said, "Following Jesus just sounds like too much of a commitment." And I said, "You know what?

    47:02-47:04

"Jesus isn't looking for any part-time help." That's true.

    47:05-47:11

So according to the Bible, when you follow Christ, it's your whole life, man.

    47:11-47:12

    It's everything.

    47:12-47:12

    So you're right.

    47:13-47:25

But I'd like you, and I just said to the man, I'd like you to really reconsider, and I'd like you to really think about the truth about what the Bible says about eternal life and how important that is.

    47:26-47:30

And then I said, "Can I have a prayer with you?" And I just had like a quick 30-second prayer with the guy.

    47:30-47:53

And in that prayer, I just said, "God, reveal yourself to this man." hard? Honestly, I don't think it is. And you're like, well, like what if somebody totally rejects you? Well, that's easy. So we need another volunteer, all right?

    47:54-48:49

How about, I'm gonna try to share with somebody, but I need you to be really mean, okay? I'm not gonna feed you your lines, this is all ad-lib. Can somebody be really mean? Derek, you mean our silky smooth velvet drummer here is gonna be mean? Alright, so you're gonna be mean, you're gonna reject. I'm gonna try to share with you, and we didn't plan this out, okay? We didn't talk about this at all, did we? I'm just gonna try to share with you, and I just want you to be as nasty as possible to me, okay? So like we're talking, maybe we're sitting across from each other at a restaurant or something and we get to talking and I say, "Hey man, do you know the story about Jesus?" Well, you know the story about Jesus, how he died on the cross for your sins?

    48:59-49:45

Well when was the last time you've been to church? 1965. That was 10 years before I was even an idea. Now see, I do that. I'm not just like playing with Derek here. I do that because I'm trying to keep the conversation from turning into a fight. So I say that and yeah, you're like, "Yeah Jeff, you're not Billy Graham and you're not Jerry Seinfeld either. I know, but I'm trying to keep the tone light here, right? I'm just trying to keep the tone light. I don't want to fight with you. And like, what would you think about coming and checking out my church sometime? Now be nasty, man. Come on. Why would you think about, what do you think about checking out my church sometime, man? I would love to have you come to Harvest Bible Chapel.

    49:53-50:17

Well, you know what? We don't, we're not going to encourage you to smoke at our church, anything of any type. However, however, I just want you to know that it's a standing invitation, all right? So you know what, our website's at the bottom of this card. Look us up online. I would love to have you come and I promise you we're not gonna throw you out, all right?

    50:21-51:23

You know what? There are some women at our church. However, we're not a dating club. I want you to come and I want you to meet someone that's more important than any woman or any man on this earth, all right? So I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you had a bad church experience, I really am, and there's nothing I can do about that, but I would just encourage you sometime, why don't you come and check us out? We'd love to have you, man. Okay, great. Now see, that wasn't even that nasty. Can he get nastier than that? No, see, that was about as much as he could ramp it up. But that's why when I say sharing personally, sometimes that's why I encourage you just go straight to the invite. If somebody's like not having it, don't want to talk about it. I just like to leave people with an open-ended invite, right? Like, and that's how I start a lot of conversations with people.

    51:24-52:46

You know, like, I'll say, "Hey, do you have a church home?" Now, your answer, okay, your answer is yes, and I'm gonna feed you your lines. You're gonna say yes, I go to Northway, okay? All right, so I meet this handsome young dude. I'm like, "Hey, do you have a church home? Oh you do? Where do you go? Oh you know what, I know some people. That's a fantastic church. I got a lot of friends over there. I'll tell you what, if that's where God has you and he's using you, that's fantastic. If you ever want to come and visit us sometime, our website's on the bottom of that. I would love for you to come and visit with us. Check out our website. It tells you what kind of church we are. That's all there is to it. That is all there is to it. Okay, one more. How about the "Do you have a church home?" and the person says no, I don't have a church home. Gosh, that one's even easier. Randy, you're up for this one. Like, okay, so we get talking, I meet this guy, and I think, you know, we get enough of a relationship going, we get into the conversation, I'm like, hey man, do you have a church home? I would love for you to come. You know what, we're part of a church plant we just launched, you know, a couple years ago. I would love to have you come and check us out. All the information is on our website right there in the bottom. You can get online. My number's on the website, give me a call. I would love to have you come and check us out. See? Now let me ask you, what was hard about that?

    52:50-53:40

Nothing. And I would just encourage you, you don't have to -- I think some people are so scared of witnessing because they think like they're gonna be under the lights and all of a sudden they're gonna have to answer all of these like Bible college questions. Share what you know about Jesus. Ask people what they've done Jesus and invite him to church. So write that down, invites, invites. You know some people just need an invitation, did you know that? Some people just need an invitation. Vision for outreach. Secondly is small groups. And small groups, our to have every small group involved in doing outreach.

    53:41-53:45

In the meantime, what we're doing, this fall we're going to be having two outreach events.

    53:45-53:47

One is with World Vision, when is that, Michelle?

    53:49-54:00

November 23rd, we're going to get a group to get onto World Vision to do some ministry down there, and we're talking with Amanda Frederick's friend about doing some, she has a outreach in Pittsburgh.

    54:00-54:11

But to get some things happening church-wide, you could call them, I guess, baby steps, just to get our church familiar with what's out there and getting involved in some of these trips.

    54:11-54:15

And the eventual goal, every small group adopts its own outreach.

    54:16-54:24

The small group that you attend once a month or once a quarter is out doing something to minister to people in this community.

    54:26-54:30

I'd like to see that happen by early 2014 with every small group.

    54:31-54:34

And then finally, Harvest Bible Fellowship.

    54:34-54:36

Right on HBF, Harvest Bible Fellowship.

    54:39-54:46

We're planning churches in Nicaragua, two in the next year, two in the following year, and there are already two or three down there now.

    54:48-54:51

And we're going to be getting involved with some other Harvest Bible Chapels.

    54:51-54:58

I know Denver and Niagara, some others are already involved that we're going to partner with them.

    54:58-55:05

And maybe we're not at a point where we can send 30 people and $30,000, maybe we're at a point where we can send three people and $3,000.

    55:06-56:18

I don't know. But we want to be sending, hopefully by next summer, send a few people down to do some mission work in Nicaragua. But that's the vision for outreach, personal, including inviting people and you sharing the gospel with people. Small groups, two events this fall, every small group doing outreach. And work down in Nicaragua. Also, I'd just encourage you to check out your bullet, and we're praying for leadership for these outreach ministries. We're praying for somebody to head up local outreach that can work with Justin and Michelle as they're over small groups, and can work with me to sort of spearhead local outreach efforts. You're like, "Well, what does that look like?" You're going to local needs. Like, you know, what does the church need to be doing in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh? What can we be doing to meet people's needs in this area? You'll connect and communicate with ministries in this area.

    56:19-56:23

How can we be a blessing? How can we share the gospel? How can we love people?

    56:27-57:01

And this position also is going to make our presence known, whether it's through community events, newspaper, web, whatever, just letting people know, "Here we are and here's what we're doing." And then international, we need a liaison with Harvest Bible Fellowship, we need somebody who's going to keep us updated on prayer and financial needs, who's going to work with the fellowship and work with me to plan short-term trips and partner with these other Harvest Bible chapels to be doing international missions. And here's what I'm I'm asking for, just simply from you, church.

    57:01-57:04

You know, we said last week about praying big things.

    57:04-57:06

I'm just asking that we pray about this right now.

    57:07-57:08

Like, we seek after the Lord.

    57:08-57:12

Hey, we need leadership for outreach, locally and internationally.

    57:12-57:13

    We need leadership for that.

    57:13-57:20

We need somebody that's going to, you know, grab that ministry and say, "I'm going after this." Let's pray for it, okay?

    57:22-58:02

You know, sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness can sound pretty intimidating, like to remind you of what Paul said in Ephesians 6 20 when he says, "Pray also for me that words may be given to me and opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains that I may declare it boldly as I ought to speak." So if the Apostle Paul had to pray for boldness and the early church had to pray for boldness. Where does boldness come from?

    58:04-58:40

Where does it come from? It comes from God, doesn't it? So church, I'm not saying leave here going, "I the tiger, come on, you can do it!" You can't. What I'm leaving here is saying, let's as a church, if we're praying for big things, one of the big things we need to pray for is boldness. Let's leave here saying, "We are going to pray that God would effectively use me and speak through me to share the love and to share the Word of Jesus Christ. God, give me boldness. It comes from Him. Paul said pray for it.

  • 00:00-00:00

    Amen.

    00:04-00:08

If you're visiting with us this month, this is a great month to be checking out Harvest Bible Chapel.

    00:09-00:11

And you're like, "Oh, as opposed to other months?" No, you know what I mean.

    00:13-00:15

We are talking about Harvest DNA.

    00:15-00:16

What kind of a church is this?

    00:19-00:22

And first of all, we talked about the mission of the church.

    00:22-00:25

The mission of our church is to glorify God.

    00:26-00:27

    That's God's mission.

    00:28-00:30

I think it's a good idea for us to be on that mission.

    00:30-00:38

We want to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission, through the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    00:38-00:41

Jesus' last command is our first priority.

    00:41-00:46

Jesus said, "Go make disciples," and that's what the mission of our church is.

    00:48-00:53

Two weeks ago we talked about proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    00:53-00:56

That's the first pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    00:56-00:57

What kind of church is this?

    00:57-01:00

We proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology.

    01:02-01:10

You're never going to hear me, or if you go to any other harvest anywhere in the world, you're never going to hear one of the harvest pastors stand up and say, "Well, this is what the Bible says.

    01:10-01:11

    I'm kind of sorry.

    01:11-01:15

It seems a little harsh, or it seems a little this, or…" God's not sorry.

    01:16-01:22

And we're not sorry when we proclaim what the Lord has said in His Word.

    01:23-01:25

That's why we are diligent to do nothing but preach the Bible.

    01:29-01:35

Our second pillar that we talked about last week was lifting high the name of Jesus through worship.

    01:36-01:43

Jesus told the Samaritan woman written down in John chapter 4 that the Father is seeking what?

    01:44-01:46

    He's seeking worshipers, right?

    01:46-01:51

God is looking down from heaven and He's looking for people who will worship Him.

    01:54-01:55

    Worship Him how?

    01:55-02:04

Well, Jesus said, "True worshippers worship in spirit and in truth." Today we're going to talk about the third pillar.

    02:04-02:05

What kind of church is this?

    02:05-02:13

Well, we would say, "Well, we want to be like the New Testament church, right?

    02:13-02:16

All in favor, let's be a New Testament church.

    02:16-02:17

Let's be like the church in the book of Acts.

    02:17-02:18

    All in favor?

    02:18-02:19

    Some of you?

    02:19-02:20

Okay, the rest of you are going to have to catch up.

    02:20-02:21

    That's what I want.

    02:21-02:23

I want to be like the church in the book of Acts.

    02:23-02:27

That's the kind of church I want Harvest Bible Chapel to be.

    02:29-02:36

But if you read about the church in the book of Acts, you'll see that the church is the place where supernatural things happen.

    02:38-02:39

    Read the book of Acts.

    02:40-03:21

early church, the early church didn't hold seminars. You don't read about Peter like assembling the people together saying, "All right church, here's how you win friends and influence people." You don't see that. You don't see Paul holding a social media networking seminar. Here's how you're going to get people to pack into your church. You just, you don't see that. You don't see this, Well, if you do A plus B, then you'll get C. The church is a place where supernatural things happen, a place where things happen that aren't humanly explainable.

    03:22-03:24

Now, I'm not talking about bizarre things.

    03:24-03:26

I'm not talking about unbiblical things.

    03:27-03:32

What I am talking about are things like this, dramatic conversions.

    03:34-03:39

The church is to be a place where dead people become alive people.

    03:40-03:41

That's what happens with the gospel of Jesus.

    03:41-03:42

    You know that, right?

    03:42-03:46

Jesus didn't come into the world to turn bad people into good people.

    03:46-03:49

He came into the world to turn dead people into alive people.

    03:49-03:54

We're dead in our sins, Ephesians 2, and we've been made alive in Jesus Christ.

    03:54-04:02

The church is to be a place where you see zombies, you know, walking dead people, come to life in Jesus Christ.

    04:04-04:08

The church is to be a place of physical and emotional healing.

    04:10-04:26

The church is to be a place where people can stand up and give testimony and say, "The doctor said there was no hope for me, but the Lord has healed me." Where people stand up and say, "I've been an emotional wreck for years, and I cried out to the Lord that He brought the emotional healing that I've needed.

    04:26-04:29

It came from Him." That should be happening in the church.

    04:33-04:44

The church should be a place where addictions are broken, whether it's addictions to drugs or alcohol or food or codependency or whatever.

    04:45-04:52

The church should be a place where you hear stories of "God has shattered my addiction.

    04:53-04:55

    God has changed my cravings.

    04:56-05:04

You know, I tried for years to get that off my back, and only the power of Jesus Christ within made that happen.

    05:08-05:29

The church should be a place where marriages are healed, where you should hear women stand up and say, "You know, I was done with him, and our marriage was in shambles, and there was no love, and as we both started seeking the Lord and seeking God's Word for our marriage, Jesus Christ healed our marriage, and how awesome He is.

    05:31-05:33

That should be happening in where?

    05:34-05:35

    The church, right?

    05:36-05:37

It should be happening in the church.

    05:38-05:52

In other words, the church should be a place where we experience direct, specific answers to prayer.

    05:54-05:56

That's the third pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    05:56-05:58

We proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology.

    05:58-06:00

We lift high the name of Jesus in worship.

    06:00-06:06

The third pillar is believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    06:08-06:13

We believe in prayer at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    06:14-06:23

If you were to talk to James MacDonald and ask him, "What would you attribute the growth of your church in this fellowship?" Do you know what he would say?

    06:24-06:25

I've had this conversation with him.

    06:25-06:26

Do you know what he would tell you?

    06:27-06:27

    Prayer.

    06:28-06:40

He said, "It is people on their faces crying out to God to glorify His name in this church." That is what is responsible for the growth of this church and this fellowship.

    06:42-06:43

It's believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    06:46-06:54

Now I'm a lot older than I look, so when I need to know what the young and hip people or saying I turned to Justin Cady.

    06:59-07:07

And when somebody attempts something but does not achieve the intended result, what the kids say nowadays is what?

    07:08-07:09

    Fail, right?

    07:09-07:10

    Have you heard this?

    07:11-07:14

All these kids and their rock and roll music and their fail.

    07:18-07:23

Well, these are some prayer fails, okay?

    07:24-07:24

    These are some prayer fails.

    07:25-07:34

I want you to write these down and you might laugh a little bit and you might get a little bit convicted because I had to wrestle through this stuff this week, so why shouldn't you, Bob?

    07:34-07:35

    All right?

    07:38-07:39

    Prayer fails.

    07:39-07:40

    Here's the first one.

    07:41-07:43

Let's just, you know what I'm going to say, so let's just get it off the table, right?

    07:44-07:45

    I'll pray for you.

    07:46-07:51

You run into somebody at church and you're like, "Hey, how's it going?" You're like, "Oh, you know what?

    07:52-07:53

We're just having a really hard time right now.

    07:53-07:56

Our kids are going through some health things and I'm sorry to hear that.

    07:57-07:59

    I'll pray for you." Liar.

    08:00-08:01

    No, you won't.

    08:01-08:02

    No, you won't.

    08:02-08:06

And I don't mean like you intended to lie, but you know what happens.

    08:06-08:15

By the time you go about your business and you get home and maybe you had to stop a couple places on the way home and then all of a sudden you've completely lost that.

    08:15-08:23

has fallen off of your mind that you know what happens the next time you see that person, you're like, "Oh no, there's Sean.

    08:23-08:24

I told him I'd pray for him.

    08:25-08:26

Oh dear God, I'm praying for Sean right now.

    08:26-08:28

Oh please bless him in every way possible.

    08:28-08:28

    Amen.

    08:28-08:36

Hey Sean, I've been praying for you." Instead of, "I'll pray for you," what do we say at harvest?

    08:37-08:38

    Let's pray right now, right?

    08:39-08:39

    Why not?

    08:40-08:40

    Why not?

    08:41-08:44

You're like, "Hey man, I'm having a hard time." All right, well let's just pray right now.

    08:45-08:46

    Boom, go into it.

    08:46-08:47

    Is God available?

    08:48-08:49

    Is God available?

    08:50-08:51

    Does He keep office hours?

    08:51-08:52

    No.

    08:53-08:54

    He's always available.

    08:54-09:01

So instead of "I'll pray for you," why can't you just say, "Let's pray right now." And let's just stop and pause.

    09:01-09:02

    Let's just pray right now.

    09:02-09:04

So I will pray for you.

    09:04-09:05

    That's a fail.

    09:08-09:11

Unless you actually write the person's name down and pray for them.

    09:11-09:14

And if you do that, I want to see your list, all right?

    09:16-09:17

    I'll show you my list.

    09:19-09:20

    I will pray for you.

    09:20-09:20

    That's a fail.

    09:21-09:28

Secondly, oh, I have a hard time saying this one.

    09:30-09:31

I'm going to try to get it out.

    09:32-09:42

When people say this, "I guess all we can do is pray." Do you know why that irritates me?

    09:42-09:42

    Do you know why?

    09:44-09:45

What have you reduced prayer to?

    09:48-09:48

    Last resort.

    09:48-09:49

    Who said that?

    09:49-09:50

    That's exactly right.

    09:50-09:51

    Last resort.

    09:51-09:57

It's almost like, "Well, if we could buy our way out, we'd buy our way out, but we don't have the money for that.

    09:57-10:01

And if we could think our way out, we'd think our way out, but we don't have the intelligence for that.

    10:02-10:07

If we could personality our way out of this, well, we don't have the charisma for that, we don't even talk that good.

    10:08-10:11

So I guess all we can do is pray.

    10:12-10:12

    Oh, the thought.

    10:14-10:25

Our only resource is the God of the universe, who is eternal and who is sovereign and who is awesome.

    10:26-11:00

Do you know, like, everything you see in this world, in this universe, do you know He created that in six 24-hour days. Did you know that? You have access to that God. And we have the audacity to say, "Well, I guess all you can do is pray." That is a big fail. Don't treat prayer like it's a last resort. I'm going to teach you something different to say. Instead of "I guess all we can do is pray," you need to say, "The best thing we can do is pray." Amen?

    11:01-11:02

The best thing we can do is pray.

    11:04-11:06

That's what you need to say.

    11:09-11:09

    Big fail.

    11:11-11:11

    Well, here's one.

    11:12-11:27

Being a pastor, I talk about these things with people, and I hear people say this, and I want to very lovingly come alongside you and say this is a fail, but when people say this, "Well, you know, Pastor Jeff, I've been kind of praying about this, and oh, you You know what, I know that's a stupid thing to pray about.

    11:30-11:34

Look, I say this with all the love and compassion that I have, but that is a fail.

    11:35-11:37

There is no stupid thing to pray about.

    11:38-11:40

There is no stupid thing to pray about.

    11:41-11:42

    In fact, Jesus addressed that.

    11:42-11:49

Remember, were you here when we, this past, what was it Bob, in January, shameless prayer?

    11:50-11:52

That was the whole point of the story in Luke chapter 11.

    11:52-12:01

this guy's buddy comes over to his house and he's like, "I don't have a snack for this guy, so I'll just go pound on my neighbor's." It's like midnight.

    12:01-12:13

He's like, "I'm going to go pound on my neighbor's house to see if he can get me some Pop-Tarts for my buddy." Because you might think, "Well, that's kind of a silly thing to be so persistently after your neighbor about." But Jesus said, "That's the whole point.

    12:14-12:15

God wants you to bring your needs.

    12:15-12:17

    There's nothing trivial to God.

    12:17-12:28

your needs to God as shameless as a guy looking for pizza rolls at midnight for his buddy." I think they said bread in the Bible, I don't know, these are more liberal translations.

    12:30-12:35

But that's the point of that, three loaves, it wasn't like my friend's starving, it's like we just want a snack.

    12:38-12:41

There's nothing stupid to pray about, there's not.

    12:47-13:04

If Cade came up to you today and said, "You know, I really like Star Wars Angry Birds." Would you say to him, "Well, that's a stupid thing to talk about." No, here's a child coming and I want to talk to you about this and so much more as a parent.

    13:04-13:07

You want your children to bring all that stuff to you, don't you?

    13:07-13:09

Bring that stuff to me so we can talk about it.

    13:09-13:11

    There's nothing stupid, okay?

    13:12-13:13

    You can pray about anything.

    13:17-13:19

    Here's another prayer fail.

    13:19-13:24

I just wrote this down, "Let's pray it safe." Let's pray it safe.

    13:26-13:41

This is very convicting for me because I've been so guilty of this, but we just pray it safe and we say this, "I've been guilty of this." We say this and we pray, "God just be with me today." How many people have prayed that?

    13:41-13:44

I so have, like ad infinitum.

    13:45-13:46

    God be with me today.

    13:49-13:56

If you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, He already is, but I think sometimes we kind of leave it there because we're just praying it's safe.

    13:58-14:01

I would encourage you instead to say, "God, I want to see Your hand at work today.

    14:02-14:04

God, I want to see You move today.

    14:04-14:16

God, I want to see You do things today that I just have to step back and say, 'That had to be God because there's no other explanation for that. Or, you know, God bless grandma.

    14:17-15:50

That's praying it's safe. How about God start a revival in North Carolina through my grandma or whatever. But don't pray it's safe, pray for big things. We're going to talk about that today. But down with this obligatory, "Oh God, just be with me today, amen." Let's get done praying it's safe, more on that in a bit. Last prayer, Phil. It doesn't matter if you pray, God's gonna do what God's gonna do, right? There's some people that have sort of resolved themselves to that attitude, that you know what? God's just gonna do what God's So it really doesn't matter if we pray. And I would say a straightforward reading of the Bible would teach otherwise. Look, I don't believe that God gave us a riddle book. I don't believe that God said -- he's like talking to his angels like, "Let's see if they can figure this out." And He gives us His Word, and we're all down here with our, you know, trying to figure out like what's the meaning between the meaning, and oh, it's like a big long cryptogram, like what do you think this means? I don't believe that at all. I believe God gave us His Word because He wants us to know Him, and He wants us to understand Him, right?

    15:52-15:57

So when we talk about prayer, and I read about prayer in this book, do you know what I read?

    15:59-16:01

Point number one on your outline, write this down.

    16:02-16:12

Here's what I read, "Prayer moves the hand of God." I want you to turn in your Bibles to James chapter 5.

    16:12-16:25

It's going to be all the way near the back of your Bible, right after the book of Hebrews, James chapter 5, we're really going to just be looking at one verse today.

    16:28-16:42

When I was talking to Darren this week about the service, I said, "Really, the sermon is just about two words." He goes, "Great, we'll get out early." Prayer moves the hand of God.

    16:45-16:46

That's what I read in the Bible.

    16:47-17:01

Now listen, I don't care if you're a Calvinist, if you're an Arminian, a Presbyterian, a Baptist, a Methodist, a Republican, or a Vegetarian, the Bible says that when we pray, God moves.

    17:04-17:11

When you read the Old Testament, it says that when people prayed, God moved.

    17:14-17:16

And then you turn to the New Testament, and do you know what it says?

    17:17-17:23

    When people pray, God moves.

    17:24-17:26

That's a straightforward reading of the Bible.

    17:27-17:31

We're going to look at one verse today, James chapter 5 verse 16.

    17:35-17:43

James says, "Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another." Thanks for looking at a couple of verses today.

    17:44-17:52

"Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed." But look at this next statement.

    17:53-17:55

This is what I want you to hone in on here.

    17:58-18:09

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

    18:14-18:19

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

    18:20-18:26

I believe that it's not my words that have the power, I believe God is the one that has the power, right?

    18:27-18:27

    Right?

    18:28-19:57

reading that right, God has the power. But notice the thing that James ties into the active working of God's power. It's prayer. The prayer of a righteous person has great power. He says the prayer has power, and I believe the reason for that, when you study word is because prayer moves the hand of God. Why does prayer have power? Well, first of all, it has power because of Jesus, right? I'm gonna make sure we clarify. The reason that your prayers are so powerful is because of Jesus Christ, because of his death on the cross and his resurrection, he has given you full access to God. Did you know that? You don't have to go to a priest or go to a minister and say, "I need you to pray to God on my behalf," as if you have some sort of access to God that I don't have. If you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, you have as much access to God as I do, as Billy Graham does, as -- insert your favorite preacher. You have the same access to God, but it's because of Jesus.

    19:59-20:14

Jesus made that possible. Jesus made it possible. Hebrews says we can go to the very throne of God. We can go to God's throne to find mercy and grace in our time of need. We can go right up to God.

    20:18-20:19

    You don't need an intercessor.

    20:21-20:25

There's no mediator other than Jesus Christ Himself.

    20:28-20:29

So that's why there's power in prayer.

    20:30-20:34

There's also power in prayer when it's done according to God's will.

    20:34-20:36

Just jot this down, "Pray for what God wants.

    20:38-20:48

Pray for what God wants." You'll find that the more you walk by the Spirit, the more you spend time in God's Word, the more you spend time in prayer, you start praying for the things that God wants.

    20:49-20:50

We'll talk more about that in a bit.

    20:54-20:59

Prayer power is also done by faith that He will move.

    21:01-21:03

Prayer needs to be prayed expectantly.

    21:04-21:13

We talked about that when we went through the book of Colossians, that when we pray We should be looking to see how God's going to answer the prayer.

    21:13-21:14

God wants us to pray expectantly.

    21:18-21:23

The powerful prayer comes from having the right theology.

    21:26-21:31

Do you know the first prayer that I remember praying, what was your first prayer?

    21:33-21:34

    Here was mine.

    21:34-21:35

    "God is great.

    21:36-21:37

    God is good.

    21:38-21:39

Let us thank Him for our food.

    21:40-21:41

Amen." How many people know that prayer?

    21:43-21:46

I was shocked I got to Bible college and found out that wasn't in the Bible.

    21:48-21:54

However, however, there is a lot of really deep theology in that prayer.

    21:56-21:59

Actually Psalm 62, do we have that for the wall, Psalm 62?

    22:01-22:01

    There it is.

    22:02-22:22

"Once God has spoken, twice have I heard this, that power belongs to God, and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love." The psalmist attributes two things to God there specifically.

    22:23-22:25

    It's power and it's what?

    22:27-22:28

    Love, right?

    22:28-22:29

    It's power and love.

    22:30-22:31

    What's God like?

    22:31-22:36

God is powerful and God is loving, and that's sort of what we teach our children to pray, right?

    22:36-22:39

God is great and God is good.

    22:41-22:48

And then we get to become adults and somehow we lose the sense of how important that is, but how utterly truthful it is.

    22:50-22:52

Powerful prayer is backed by this.

    22:53-22:58

It's believing that God will move because He is able and because He loves me.

    22:58-22:59

    Do you believe that?

    23:01-23:02

    Do you believe that?

    23:05-23:10

Do you believe that powerful prayer is backed by the truth that God is able and because God loves me?

    23:10-23:11

    Do you believe that?

    23:14-23:16

Some of you don't look convinced, so we're going to break it down.

    23:17-23:19

Do you believe that God is able to answer prayer?

    23:20-23:22

A show of hands, do you believe God is able to answer prayer?

    23:23-23:24

    Everybody, fantastic.

    23:24-23:26

I don't have to sell you on that, right?

    23:27-23:29

God is able to answer prayer.

    23:31-23:33

All right, now how many people believe that God loves them?

    23:36-23:41

The cross of Jesus Christ testifies that God loves us.

    23:43-23:58

Okay, so we put those two truths together, that God is able and that God loves me, and What you have is the proper theology for prayer.

    24:01-24:05

What you have is the proper attitude in approaching God in prayer.

    24:05-24:15

"God, I'm crying out to you because I know you're able and because I know you love me." Now listen, confidence in God is not cockiness.

    24:17-24:19

Confidence in praying to God is not cockiness.

    24:19-24:28

It's just a right understanding of who He is when you're able to pray boldly.

    24:32-25:01

Last Monday, as the news came out about the shooting at the Navy Yard, later that evening I turned on Monday Night Football, and the commentators, in speaking of the shooting, they said, "All of our thoughts are with the victims." And then later, right before the game, did you see this?

    25:01-25:05

Before the game, they said, "We're going to take a moment of..." Did you see this?

    25:07-25:21

We're going to take a moment of silent reflection." And I thought, "You know, they won't even say 'pray.' Our thoughts are with them, we'll take silent reflection.

    25:21-25:25

They won't even say 'pray,' let alone pretend to do it." And I was thinking about that.

    25:25-25:30

That's sort of opposite of the church where we actually say it a lot, but only pretend to do it.

    25:34-25:35

Why do we hesitate to pray?

    25:36-25:37

    Why do we hesitate?

    25:42-25:45

Why isn't prayer just default mode for us?

    25:45-25:55

If we know God is all-powerful and we know God loves us with an infinite love, why do some of us struggle to make prayer default mode?

    25:59-26:01

    I put down three things.

    26:01-26:06

There's three things why I believe people struggle with prayer, because sometimes prayer isn't always answered right now.

    26:07-26:09

Prayer isn't always answered right now.

    26:09-26:11

I think that's why some people struggle with prayer.

    26:12-26:19

When I was going to Bible college, I was living out in Ohio, I was working at Walmart.

    26:19-26:20

    I know, I know, don't covet.

    26:21-26:54

But I was working at Walmart and I remember this one day, they had all these bikes out on the sidewalk and this big rainstorm was coming and it was these massive winds coming through and they're like, "Jeff, we need you to go cover "those bikes with a tarp." Well, they had this tarp that was like eight feet wide by about 500 feet long that I had to cover this row of bikes with and I looked like a clown out there trying to figure out with the wind blowing and the tarp twisting and wrapping and flapping and blowing all over the place.

    26:57-26:59

    I remember I stopped.

    27:00-27:01

    I was a little disgusted.

    27:02-27:03

    I just stopped.

    27:03-27:12

I said, "God, if you want these bikes covered, you're going to have to do it." I kid you not.

    27:13-27:22

A gust of wind came, blew the tarp up, flattened it, and rested it on top of the bikes perfectly.

    27:26-27:42

And I remember standing in front of Walmart, looking up at the pitch black sky, and I just said, "Thanks." Well, here's the thing.

    27:43-27:45

I wish all my prayers were answered like that.

    27:46-27:48

I wish all my prayers were answered like that.

    27:52-27:59

You know, for years, actually for about seven and a half years, I've been praying for my son's health.

    27:59-28:10

As many of you know, my older son Owen is pretty severely autistic and non-verbal, and he has a lot of health issues going on, and a lot of cognitive delays.

    28:10-28:30

And I have prayed, I have fasted for years, and oh, that God would have answered that prayer the way He answered the prayer for that stupid tarp and those cheap bicycles.

    28:32-28:36

But the truth is, sometimes prayer isn't always answered right this minute.

    28:40-28:52

Sometimes in prayer God says, "I'm on a different timetable than you on this." That leads me to the next thing, prayer isn't always answered all at once.

    28:53-28:54

Why do we hesitate to pray?

    28:55-28:58

Prayer isn't always answered all at once.

    28:58-29:02

Now, when I say right now I'm talking about time, but when I say all at once I'm talking degree.

    29:09-29:18

Sometimes in prayer, he might not do 100% of the job right that minute, but he might get a process started.

    29:19-29:34

And I can certainly say in talking about Owen, it's been a long seven and a half years since we found out there were some things wrong, but I can tell you this, he's a lot further along now than He was this time last year.

    29:38-29:40

So sometimes it doesn't happen all at once.

    29:42-29:53

Here's another one, last one, "Prayer isn't always answered my way." "It isn't always answered my way," meaning this, prayer isn't about activating some sort of electric force or something.

    29:54-30:01

Prayer is communication with a person, but not just any person, a person who is infinitely wiser than I am.

    30:01-30:27

So my prayer in bringing to my heavenly Father what I want always has to yield with, "But God, if you have a different plan, I'm certainly game because you're a lot smarter than me." And you say, "Well, I struggle with that." You know what, church?

    30:27-30:28

I do too sometimes, I'll be honest with you.

    30:28-30:29

    I struggle with that too.

    30:32-30:34

Why doesn't God just do what I want immediately?

    30:35-30:41

Why does God sometimes take us through these hard roads and through these processes?

    30:45-30:47

Anybody else ever wrestled with that?

    30:47-30:50

Why does God take us through these hard roads sometimes?

    30:53-30:53

    Here's why.

    30:56-31:01

this down, sometimes the process is the point.

    31:03-31:04

Sometimes the process is the point.

    31:04-31:11

You're like, "God, I want this prayer answered," and God's like, "Oh, I'm at work, but we're going to get on a road here." Well, why?

    31:11-31:16

Well, sometimes the point that God is trying to make is through the process.

    31:16-31:17

What do you mean by that?

    31:17-31:28

What I mean is this, when you spend time walking with the Lord and wrestling in prayer with Him over things, what you find over that period is your faith is strengthened.

    31:30-31:34

What you find over that period is God is growing your perseverance.

    31:37-31:41

Bible says, "Let patience have its perfect work." God is growing your perseverance.

    31:42-31:45

God is developing you as a person as you wrestle through these things.

    31:51-31:55

Parents, what would your kids be like if you gave them what they wanted immediately?

    31:56-31:59

Every time they asked, no matter what they asked for, what would your kids be like?

    32:00-32:00

Go ahead and shout it out.

    32:03-32:04

    Spoiled brats, right?

    32:05-32:06

Wouldn't your kids be spoiled brats?

    32:07-32:10

"Mommy, I want this." Boom, here it is.

    32:11-32:14

"Mommy, I want Chuck E. Cheese." We'll get in the car, here we go.

    32:16-32:20

"Mommy, I want a pony." "Okay, Daddy, get out there and build that fence.

    32:20-32:25

We're getting a pony." Your kids would be unbearable.

    32:26-32:30

We'd have to like start our own ministry at this church just for your little brat.

    32:34-32:35

    But you don't do that.

    32:39-32:47

And sometimes I believe that God in His wisdom realizes there's some maturing that needs to happen in us.

    32:49-32:58

There's some strength and some perseverance that needs to develop in us, but the ultimate goal really is about growing closer to Jesus.

    33:00-33:09

You know, if you accumulate the time that Aaron and I have prayed for our kids over the past seven years.

    33:12-33:14

How many minutes of that prayer time would you say was wasted?

    33:17-33:18

    The answer is not.

    33:19-33:35

If God is taking us through this process where we're drawing closer to Jesus in prayer, where we're learning greater dependence upon God in prayer, we're learning about the love and The patience and grace of God through prayer?

    33:39-33:45

There's a sense in which you can be thankful for the very affliction that's driving you to your knees.

    33:46-33:51

Because sometimes the point is God's taking you through a process.

    33:52-33:53

    The process is the point.

    33:58-34:00

    You totally get that, right?

    34:01-34:02

How many of you have seen a movie?

    34:03-34:04

Anybody here ever seen a movie?

    34:05-34:06

Some of you have never seen a movie.

    34:09-34:14

There's these buildings that have these giant screens, even bigger than this one, where they show a moving picture show.

    34:16-34:18

Some of them are in color and have sound now.

    34:19-34:20

How many people have seen a movie?

    34:20-34:20

    Come on.

    34:20-34:21

    It's not a trick question.

    34:21-34:22

    Okay, thank you.

    34:24-34:27

Sometimes I just throw those things out to see who's still tuned in.

    34:28-34:39

Like, "No, I've never seen a movie." "Oh, yeah, movie, movie." movie. All right, refined search. How many of you have seen Rocky? Any of the Rockys?

    34:41-35:14

Okay, which Rocky is the best? Who said one? I'm sorry, that's not the right answer. I wasn't asking your opinion, there's a right answer to this. No, I'm sorry Justin, it's not to. Rocky 3 is the best one because it has Hulk Hogan in it. And Club Alang. Rocky 4 wasn't bad either. I kind of lost track after, I didn't see anything after Rocky 4.

    35:20-35:27

Let's pretend that we're on our way to see Rocky III.

    35:28-35:30

    You've never seen it before.

    35:36-35:36

    But I have.

    35:37-35:45

Let's say we're on the way and I'm like, "Hey, let me tell you how the movie ends." You're like, "I don't want to hear how the movie ends.

    35:45-35:50

Don't you hate when people spoil it for you?" Now, let me tell you how it ends.

    35:50-35:53

You know what, let's, I'll tell you what, let's go get something to eat.

    35:53-36:02

I'll just tell you how the movie ends and we won't have to see it." And you would say, "I want to see the movie, right?" I'm like, "No, no, no, no, no, no, you're not listening.

    36:04-36:06

You don't, you don't have to see the movie.

    36:07-36:08

I will tell you how it ends.

    36:10-36:12

I will save you a couple hours.

    36:14-36:18

You don't have to see the movie, but I want to see the movie.

    36:21-36:25

Why would you want to see the movie if I'll tell you how it ends?

    36:31-36:41

Because going to see the movie is about enjoying watching the story unfold to lead up to the ending, right?

    36:41-36:43

Isn't that why you go to the movies?

    36:44-37:17

Otherwise, when a new movie comes out, you just go to Wikipedia, read the synopsis and be like, "Okay, got that one down." It's about going to see, you know, here's a character and here's how the story unfolds and here's the trials he goes through and then Hulk Hogan throws him over the top rope and then, you know, the big fight with Clubber lying at the end, "You ain't so bad." And I don't want to spoil it in case somebody hasn't seen it, but it's about experiencing the process, right?

    37:25-37:38

Brothers and sisters, sometimes that's what God's doing in us, to say, "There's an answer But in the meantime, we're working on your story.

    37:39-38:01

I am weaving this beautiful story of my grace and your dependence and my provision, and I'm weaving this beautiful story through your life that when the prayer gets answered, you're going to stand up and say, "This is how awesome my God is." It's about the process.

    38:03-38:04

Prayer is an act of faith.

    38:04-38:06

We talk about faith a lot.

    38:07-38:08

Faith is not a ticket to heaven.

    38:08-38:10

Faith is a relationship with God.

    38:11-38:13

    Faith doesn't control God.

    38:13-38:15

    Faith trusts God.

    38:17-38:23

But faith means that God is working even when I don't see what He's doing and even when I don't understand what He's doing.

    38:26-38:28

Because faith ultimately means this church.

    38:30-38:52

When I'm wrestling in prayer with God about something, I'm embracing two truths with everything that I have, and these two truths are this, "God is great, and He loves me." So as I close, here's what I want to challenge you on.

    38:52-38:56

    Number two, pray big things.

    39:00-39:04

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

    39:04-39:16

It has power, it's working, but I want you to focus on just one more word here, and that word is "great." Prayer has great power.

    39:18-39:20

    Prayer doesn't have little power.

    39:26-39:27

    Prayer has great power.

    39:30-39:36

That's why I'm going to challenge you and I'm going to encourage you to ask God for the impossible.

    39:42-39:49

Not only is that an option, but I believe that you should ask God for the impossible, knowing that God's abilities surpass our audacity.

    39:53-39:56

You understand that you're never going to exceed God's capacity.

    39:56-39:57

    Did you know that?

    39:58-40:04

Like, you know what, I'd really like to pray about this, but I don't think God can cover this one.

    40:10-40:16

You know, I really need to pray for God to make a financial provision in my life, but You know, maybe God's being affected by this recession too.

    40:21-40:22

You know, I really need to pray.

    40:24-40:39

This family member had a stroke, and I need to pray about it, but I mean, if the medical doctors seem a little, you know, like they're having a hard time with it, why would I think that God's able to handle it?

    40:40-40:42

You are never going to exceed God's capacity.

    40:45-40:54

So, not only pray, not only should you come before God and pray big things, but I also want to encourage you to move forward by faith when you pray big things.

    40:58-41:07

You should be seeking God for the impossible, and you should be moving forward by faith to see how God is going to answer that prayer, or to put it in Old Testament terms.

    41:09-41:18

Remember God would tell Israel that He's going to win the battle for them, but you know they They still strapped on their armor and went out to fight, right?

    41:19-41:21

It wasn't like, "Oh, God's going to win the battle?

    41:21-41:23

Okay, I'm just going to stay home and play Xbox.

    41:23-41:26

God's got this." They still went to battle.

    41:26-41:27

    Why?

    41:28-41:36

Because them moving forward was an active act of their faith, to say, "I believe God's Word.

    41:36-41:49

I believe He's going to show up, and I'm moving, trusting that He's going to." In the same way, church, when you pray and you ask God for the impossible, you too need to move forward by faith.

    41:51-41:52

    Pray and prepare.

    41:56-41:58

Meaning this, maybe you're having a rough marriage right now.

    42:00-42:01

Maybe you're having a rough marriage.

    42:03-42:05

Well, you need to be praying for your spouse.

    42:06-42:08

Like, "Okay, that's what I'm going to do.

    42:08-42:15

I'm going to move out, I'm going to get my own apartment, and I'm going to pray for my wife that God would change her heart." That might not be the best plan.

    42:16-42:29

Maybe you should pray that God would work on both of your hearts, and in the meantime, writing letters to your wife, buying gifts for your wife, taking your wife out on dates, giving her words of affirmation.

    42:30-42:48

Maybe you should be doing those things in the meantime while you're praying for God to change your hearts. Maybe you have a need for a job. I'm just going to stay at home and see if any major corporations show up at my door and offer me a job.

    42:50-43:29

Pray and put out the resume. Pray, put out the application. Pray, talk to people, but pray that God would be leading you and providing for you to the job that He want you to have. Maybe you're praying for your health to say, "You know what, God, I haven't been taking care of this physical body at all, God, and God, I pray that you would really help turn my health around." Well, maybe that means also while you're praying for that, you need to change some eating habits, change some lifestyle habits. You're praying for a six-pack and you're eating Krispy Kremes by the handful.

    43:30-43:31

    Not a good plan.

    43:33-43:34

"So what are you saying, Pastor Jeff?

    43:34-43:36

You're saying that God needs our help?" No.

    43:37-43:40

I'm saying by faith, you're cooperating with God's purposes.

    43:41-43:41

    That's all.

    43:42-43:49

You're praying for something, you're saying, "God, I'm going to cooperate with your purposes." Don't pray for rain and forget to take your umbrella.

    43:51-43:54

Are you wrestling in prayer over something right now?

    43:56-44:03

As I close, I want to just encourage you in this, church.

    44:06-44:13

Sometimes all that is between you and answered prayer is time.

    44:16-44:20

And the question is, what are you going to do in the meantime?

    44:22-44:22

    Look back at this verse.

    44:23-44:24

If the worship team would make their way forward.

    44:26-44:32

Look back up at this verse, James 15, verses 16 and 17.

    44:33-44:34

    He talks about Elijah.

    44:36-44:43

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.

    44:43-44:45

We kind of get fixated on that three and a half year thing.

    44:46-44:48

    Like, wow, could you imagine?

    44:48-44:49

    Could you imagine?

    44:49-44:54

Like, he prayed and like, the heavenly spigot was shut off.

    44:54-44:55

God did not allow it to rain.

    44:56-44:57

Like, wow, wow, that was awesome.

    44:58-44:58

    And it was.

    44:59-45:00

    It was awesome.

    45:00-45:07

But, I think sometimes we miss the other part of that verse.

    45:09-45:11

Which I really think was James' point.

    45:13-45:18

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours.

    45:22-45:23

    Elijah was just a guy.

    45:25-45:26

He was just a human being.

    45:27-45:29

He was just someone who loved the Lord.

    45:33-45:36

You know the only difference between you and Elijah?

    45:37-45:38

    You know what it is?

    45:38-46:17

only difference between you and Elijah is Elijah asked. Elijah asked. Earlier in James in chapter 4 and verse 2 he says, "You do not have because you do not ask." And I have to ask myself, "How much of my life have I longed for and forfeited just because I didn't ask?" Here's the challenge I want to lay before you this week, church.

    46:18-46:20

Not just this week, I would say as long as it takes.

    46:21-46:22

With your bulletin, did you get a little slip of paper?

    46:24-46:25

I want you to take that out.

    46:30-46:36

Because at Harvest Bible Chapel we believe firmly in the power of prayer.

    46:39-46:50

And because we believe firmly in the power of prayer, because we believe that God is great and that God loves us, I'm encouraging you to pray big things.

    46:53-46:54

Here's what I want you to do.

    46:55-47:09

On this slip of paper it says, "I'm bringing this to God because He loves me, because He is powerful, and because I believe in the power of prayer." Is there something in your life right now that you need God to show up for?

    47:11-47:17

Is there something in your life right now where you're saying, "God, I need You.

    47:18-47:26

God, if you don't show up, this isn't going to happen.

    47:28-47:29

I want you to write that down.

    47:31-47:32

I want you to write that down.

    47:34-47:35

    And look underneath here.

    47:36-47:37

This is what I want you to do.

    47:37-47:38

I want you to write this down.

    47:38-47:46

I want you to stick this in your Bible so when you spend time in God's Word, and you spend time in prayer, I want you to pull this out and I want you to pray for this request.

    47:49-48:09

I want you to pray over this. I want you to pray believing that God hears you, because He does. I want you to pray believing that God has the power to answer it, because He does. And I want you to pray believing that God loves you and is going to accomplish His purpose in your life because He will and He does.

    48:11-48:14

A couple tips for you here at the bottom to keep in mind when you pray.

    48:14-48:16

I encourage you first of all, pray according to God's will.

    48:18-48:22

Pray according to God's will, meaning this, why are you asking God for this?

    48:25-48:27

I make this a habit when I pray.

    48:27-48:37

God, the reason that I'm asking you this is because, the reason I do that, the reason I'm encouraging you to do that is it lets us wrestle with our motives before God.

    48:40-48:45

"You know, God, I really need you to give me a lot of money because I really need a sports car." Well, wait a minute.

    48:46-48:50

Am I praying according to God's will or according to Jeff's selfishness?

    48:52-48:57

I really don't pray for that, but if you want to give me a sports car, I won't turn you down.

    48:58-48:59

But pray according to God's will.

    49:01-49:02

    Pray for what God wants.

    49:03-49:04

Why are you asking God for this?

    49:04-49:07

Secondly, I would encourage you this, pray according to His promises.

    49:08-49:09

What has God promised in His Word?

    49:11-49:12

    We saw some today, right?

    49:12-49:16

The prayer of a righteous man has great power as it is working.

    49:17-49:18

    Pray according to His promises.

    49:19-49:21

"God, You promised that You would provide for me.

    49:21-49:31

God, You promised that if I sought You first, You would give me the things that I need." That's praying according to God's promises.

    49:33-49:35

Thirdly, I would say pray recalling His past goodness.

    49:36-49:37

You see this all through the Bible, right?

    49:38-49:43

Israel was always like, "You are the Lord our God who brought us out of Egypt." You know why they kept saying that?

    49:43-49:48

They were remembering, "God, You love us and You have so miraculously provided for us in the past.

    49:48-49:56

That's why we cry out to You today." So pray recalling his past goodness, how has God shown his faithfulness to you previously?

    49:57-50:03

And the last thing is move forward in faith, meaning this, how are you going to cooperate with his purposes?

    50:04-50:06

How are you going to cooperate with his purposes?

    50:08-50:09

    This isn't a magic ticket.

    50:12-50:14

This is an encouragement to pray biblically.

    50:16-50:23

This is an encouragement to take God at His Word and to believe firmly in the power of prayer.

    50:25-50:32

As we close today, I'm going to come down here and pray because I have some big things that I need to pray about.

    50:33-50:35

Now, there's nothing magical about this area, okay?

    50:36-50:37

    This isn't the altar.

    50:38-50:40

It's not like there's more Holy Spirit up here or anything.

    50:41-50:42

    Nothing like that at all.

    50:43-50:46

So why do we encourage people to come forward and pray sometimes?

    50:46-50:53

Well, the reason that sometimes we do that is because stepping forward is an act of faith.

    50:54-50:56

Could you pray over these things in your seat?

    50:56-50:57

    Of course you can.

    50:58-51:01

But I think there's something special about, "I'm stepping up.

    51:02-51:13

God, I'm moving my feet forward and I'm moving up because I'm not content to just sit in my seat and think about whether I should bring these things before you in prayer.

    51:14-51:15

So I'm going to be down here.

    51:15-51:17

Robert, would you come down and pray with me too, man?

    51:17-51:18

We're gonna be down here praying.

    51:18-51:22

If you wanna come up, I just ask the worship team, if they'd play quietly for a few minutes.

    51:24-51:26

Come up and cry out to the Lord with us.

    51:27-51:35

And after we spend some time in prayer, I'll pray over the congregation and we'll have our closing song, okay?

    51:36-51:36

    So let's pray.
