Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Zeal

Introduction:

Jesus Knows Your Heart... (John 2:13-25):

  1. And He won't Ignore your Irreverence . (John 2:13-17)

    Psalm 69:9 - For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

  2. And He won't Appease your into Animosity . (John 2:18-22)

Mark 14:56-58 - For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"

Matthew 27:39-40 - And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross."

  1. And He won't be Fooled by your "Faith" . (John 2:23-25)

3 Danger Signs that your Faith is a Show:

  1. You don't exercise personal / private disciplines
  2. You harbor secret sin
  3. You don't see the Fruit of the Spirit in your life (see Gal 5:22)

Read John 2:13-25

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Jesus was obviously angry at the sellers in the Temple. When is it appropriate to be angry? When is it inappropriate?

  3. What are some ways churches today can become a “house of trade” (John 2:16)?

  4. Why do you think the Jews weren’t satisfied with the signs they saw? See John 2:23 and John 2:18 for reference.

  5. Why is the testimony of Scripture more important than seeing a “flashy” sign by God? See also Luke 16:31 and 2 Peter 1:17-19

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Glory

Introduction:

Manifesting His Glory - What Jesus Wants Us to Know from His First Miracle (John 2:1-12):

  1. Jesus Cares about what you Care about. (John 2:3)

    Matthew 10:29-31 - Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  1. Jesus turns Ordinary things into Extrardinary things. (John 2:9)
  2. Jesus saves the Best for Last. (John 2:10)

    Romans 8:18 - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think Jesus answered His mother how He did (John 2:4), but then helped her anyways?

  3. Why do you think this was chosen as Jesus’ first miracle? What does this tell you about the compassion of Jesus, and how He views “minor” things?

  4. If this was the debut miracle, why didn’t Jesus make this more of a “show”/production? Why do you think He did this so “quietly”?

  3. Your heart must Receive what He gives. (John 1:29-34)

  2. Explain John the Baptist’s mission. What was He telling to do concerning the coming Christ (John 1:23, see Isaiah 40:3)? How was baptism a way people were preparing themselves?

  3. How is “exalting Christ” a motivator to “knowing Christ”?

  4. How would you reply if someone asked you, “How can I grow in exalting Christ in my own life?”

  5. Read John 1:29. What is the significance of “taking away” sin?

  6. *Bonus: John the Baptist got the greatest compliment in the history of everything - Matthew 11:11. What do you think it was about John that made Jesus say this?
