    01:26-01:36

Amen So, there's one day early on in my career that it was winter time and my dad told my brother Kent and I that we were going out to this one job.

    01:37-01:44

We had to get up on a roof which was covered in snow and we had to reach up to a higher wall to do a little bit of work.

    01:45-01:49

When I left the shop in the morning, my dad told me, "Ryan, you have one job to do.

    01:49-01:53

All you're going to do is hold Kent's ladder." I said, "Okay, that's easy.

    01:54-01:55

I can do that, I think.

    01:56-01:59

So we get out to the job and things are going along pretty well.

    02:00-02:04

Kent would go up the ladder, I'd hold the ladder for him. As he'd come down, I'd move out of the way.

    02:05-02:06

Things were going along just smoothly.

    02:07-02:14

Well, like I said, it was wintertime and that roof was covered in snow, so it was an extremely slick surface. So it was vitally important that I hold this ladder.

    02:17-02:25

But also, whenever it's cold out, we carry heating chests to keep our material warm, and it's just an easier process for us if materials warm to work with.

    02:26-02:29

And I noticed that that heating element had gone out.

    02:29-02:32

So I was kind of messing with it, trying to figure out why it wasn't working.

    02:32-02:45

And as Kent was getting more material, he said, "Hey, get over here, I'm going up this ladder." And I told him, "Just hold on a second, "let me see if I can, "let me figure out what's going on with this." I mean, I had no idea why it wasn't working, but I wanted to act like I knew.

    02:48-02:52

So Kent, in typical older brother fashion, ignored me and went up the ladder.

    02:53-02:56

And in typical younger brother fashion, I ignored him.

    02:57-02:59

    Two people ignoring each other.

    03:01-03:08

Not ten seconds later, Kent gets to the top of that ladder, reached up as high as he could, and wham! That ladder kicked out.

    03:09-03:11

Kent probably fell 20, 25 feet.

    03:12-03:20

And I watched him fall from the top and just smack the ground, and just crumpled into this heap of human.

    03:22-03:26

And my initial thought, honestly, my initial thought, I thought he was dead.

    03:27-03:29

    But he obviously wasn't.

    03:29-03:30

    He's still here today.

    03:32-03:35

But I remember having to call my dad and be like, "Hey, Dad.

    03:37-03:39

Remember that one thing you told me to do?

    03:40-03:41

    Yeah, I didn't do that.

    03:42-03:48

And exactly what you thought was going to happen, happened." And I remember, and my dad's sitting over here laughing.

    03:49-03:52

And I remember how mad he was at us.

    03:53-03:55

Because he's like, "Ryan, I told you to do one thing.

    03:56-03:56

    One thing.

    03:57-04:07

And you didn't do it." And for years, my brother, it's kind of become a standing joke that I blame Kent that he fell because he didn't listen to me, and he blames me because I didn't listen to him.

    04:08-04:10

And all in all, the truth is I didn't do my job.

    04:11-04:16

As much as I want to blame Kent, I didn't do my job.

    04:16-04:19

I was told by my dad to do one job.

    04:20-04:24

And whether I wanted to do it or not, I was to do that job.

    04:27-04:30

And see, our heavenly father also tells us to do one job.

    04:31-04:35

And whether we wanna do that or not, we have a duty to that job.

    04:37-04:45

And that job is to preach the word, preach the gospel, not just with our words, but with our actions, with our lives.

    04:46-04:50

We have to live out the gospel and tell every single person about the gospel.

    04:51-04:52

    That is our job.

    04:54-05:02

And please don't think that this is just another how to witness better sermon, because telling people about the gospel goes far beyond just witnessing to them.

    05:02-05:04

Like I said, it's a call to action.

    05:05-05:08

Your life has to match the words coming out of your mouth and vice versa.

    05:11-05:16

And when we look at this passage, like Jeff said on the video, we're going in in 2 Timothy 4.

    05:17-05:21

Paul is talking to Timothy, and so it's two pastors talking to each other.

    05:21-05:25

And I don't want anybody to zone out and go, "Ok, this is just for pastors." No, no, no.

    05:25-05:32

This is so applicable for us here today in our current America, in our current country that we live in.

    05:32-05:34

Now more than ever, people need the Gospel.

    05:34-05:36

And it is our job to get that to them.

    05:39-05:44

So let's look at what Paul told Timothy and find the application in these words.

    05:46-06:01

So, verse number 1, 2 Timothy 4, "I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom, preach the Word.

    06:02-06:05

Be ready in season and out of season.

    06:05-06:09

Reprove, rebuke, exhort with complete patience and teaching.

    06:09-06:24

"For the time is coming when people will not endorse sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." Let's stop right there for a second.

    06:26-06:27

Did you hear what he said there?

    06:27-06:29

He said the time is coming when people aren't going to listen.

    06:30-06:32

It sounds really familiar right now.

    06:33-06:37

Shout out, what's the hot button topics that people are talking about?

    06:37-06:43

Not, don't tell me about political things, whether it be immigration or tax laws, anything.

    06:43-06:47

What's the moral hot button topic that people are talking about?

    06:47-06:47

    Shout 'em out.

    06:49-06:50

    Abortion.

    06:51-06:51

    What else?

    06:51-06:52

    What's that?

    06:53-06:54

    Homosexuality.

    06:55-06:55

    Transgender.

    06:58-07:00

Those are the things that we're arguing about in today's America.

    07:02-07:03

    And what's happening?

    07:03-07:08

The people on either side of the coin are finding somebody that says, no, you're right.

    07:09-07:10

And on the other side, they're going, no, you're right.

    07:11-07:13

    And everybody's just choosing sides.

    07:15-07:18

They're doing exactly what Paul said they were gonna do.

    07:19-07:20

    They're gonna turn away.

    07:21-07:23

They're gonna find teachers that suit their own passions.

    07:23-07:25

That's exactly what people are doing today.

    07:27-07:36

And now, more than ever, we as Christians, as followers of Christ have to stand up and be bold.

    07:37-07:43

We can't be these, I stole this off Caleb, we can't be secret agent Christians anymore.

    07:43-07:46

We have to get out of the shadows, stop lurking around behind everything.

    07:47-07:49

Be bold, be proud of who we are.

    07:49-07:53

Because everybody needs to hear that, especially here.

    07:53-07:55

Out our back door, people need to hear this.

    07:58-08:00

This is the time where it's so powerful.

    08:00-08:02

    God's word is so powerful.

    08:03-08:06

We have to be bold today, starting today.

    08:10-08:13

And you might be sitting here going, I hear you, but I don't know how to do that.

    08:15-08:17

But the good thing is, Paul didn't stop talking to Timothy.

    08:19-08:29

He laid out exactly how to do that, and he told Timothy that, and we too can lean from that and use those same principles today.

    08:30-08:32

So let's look at how we preach the gospel.

    08:34-08:44

Verse five, as for you, Christians, as for you, each and every person here, as for you, always be sober-minded.

    08:45-08:46

    This is my first point.

    08:47-08:48

    Stay focused.

    08:51-08:52

    Stay focused.

    08:54-08:57

We know what being sober means, okay?

    08:57-08:59

    It means don't be drunk.

    09:00-09:03

But it also means don't have distractions in your life.

    09:04-09:06

Allow your mind to be free.

    09:06-09:11

Allow your mind to be clear so that you can focus, so you can stay focused.

    09:14-09:18

Every year, a neighbor of mine and myself, we go hunting.

    09:19-09:21

We go up to Mahaffey, PA.

    09:21-09:22

He has a camp up there.

    09:23-09:28

And it's usually around the same time every year, first or second weekend in November.

    09:28-09:29

And it's a lot of fun.

    09:29-09:32

we spent about three days up there and we just hunt the whole time.

    09:33-09:37

Typical, you know, macho man weekend, okay?

    09:39-09:46

But I tell you what, that week leading up to that Thursday night when I pull out of my house, man, I'm the world's best husband.

    09:47-09:49

Why? Because I don't want to get grounded, okay?

    09:51-09:53

Because I so bad want to go on that trip.

    09:53-09:55

I so bad want to go guilt-free.

    09:56-10:03

that I don't want my wife to be upset with me, that I didn't get anything done, that I picked a fight with her that's still going on?

    10:04-10:10

Because who wants to go on a fun weekend, whatever it may be, whether it's hunting, fishing, golfing, whatever it may be?

    10:10-10:14

Who wants to go knowing that the second I get home, things aren't going to be good?

    10:15-10:21

No, you want to go and you want to have so much fun and you don't honestly want to think about what's going on at home.

    10:22-10:34

So your focus that week leading up to - asked me to re-shingle the roof, and I will go to Home Depot at 3 a.m. in the morning, get all the material, come home and start working and not stop until that roof's done.

    10:36-10:43

So that when I pull out on Thursday, I'm done. And that's the same focus we have to have.

    10:43-10:55

I'm focused on, I watch every single word that I say, I'm real careful about what I do, I have the blinders on because I don't want, like I said, I love my wife, but I don't I don't want to upset her, I want to go.

    10:57-10:59

And that's the same focus we have to have.

    11:03-11:04

You might ask me, how do I stay focused?

    11:05-11:08

Well, first of all, you have to figure out what the distractions are in your life.

    11:10-11:14

You have to figure those out, and you're the only person that knows what those distractions are.

    11:14-11:18

And you have to find them, and you have to remove them from your life.

    11:19-11:20

And maybe you can't remove them.

    11:22-11:27

But you have to find a way for those to no longer be distractions in your life.

    11:28-11:34

You have to control them so that you are staying completely focused on your one job as a Christian.

    11:37-11:40

You have to be focused in preaching the gospel.

    11:42-11:51

Back in verse 5, "As for you, always be sober-minded," we said that, stay focused, "endure suffering." That's my second point, endure suffering.

    11:54-12:05

About a year ago, actually about two years ago now, a friend of my wife's from high school was diagnosed with cancer.

    12:06-12:08

And she was 28 years old.

    12:09-12:11

    She had a three-year-old and a one-year-old.

    12:13-12:16

and a husband that they were high school sweethearts.

    12:17-12:18

    Really all American story.

    12:20-12:22

She was a beautiful young lady.

    12:22-12:24

She was a beauty pageant contestant.

    12:24-12:26

Just had such a strong testimony for Christ.

    12:28-12:35

And I remember my wife showed me on Facebook that she did this Facebook live video and just kind of announcing that she had been diagnosed with this cancer.

    12:36-12:42

And it was early on and they kind of thought, okay, we can get control of this and had a lot of high hopes.

    12:44-12:45

And she praised God at the end of it.

    12:47-12:59

She glorified God and she said, "Whatever happens, God's in control." But oftentimes that's easy when you don't really know what the end results are gonna be.

    12:59-13:01

At that time it was pretty positive.

    13:02-13:06

But as the year went on, every month or so, she would put up a medical update.

    13:07-13:10

And each time, the diagnosis would get worse and worse.

    13:12-13:15

And every time, at the end, she would praise God.

    13:18-13:31

And about a year later, I remember she put a video on and her beauty pageant sisters had done a fundraiser for her and in less than 24 hours, they raised $11,000 for her and her husband.

    13:33-13:34

And you might say, man, that's awesome.

    13:34-13:42

But all I could see was this maybe 80-pound girl that just looked like a human skeleton.

    13:44-13:46

She could hardly talk at this point.

    13:47-13:58

The cancer had spread throughout her entire body and just had turned into, I think at that point she had multiple cancers and it just destroyed her.

    14:00-14:07

And two weeks later she passed, leaving her husband, her one-year-old, and her three-year-old.

    14:09-14:16

And I remember, for me and my wife, that hit us so hard because I'm pretty much in that same boat where I have little children.

    14:16-14:21

And in my mind, I sat there and I went, "What would I do if I was the husband and my wife left me?

    14:23-14:24

"My wife takes care of everything.

    14:26-14:41

"And for her to just be gone, what do I do?" And I remember I was at the Tough Mudder one day and I got back to the truck and got cleaned up and Sarah had sent me a text and she said, you need to get on Facebook and you need to see what Caleb, her husband, posted.

    14:44-14:48

And he put a Facebook Live video on maybe hours after his wife had passed.

    14:51-15:05

And in his obvious sorrow of, he had just lost his beautiful wife, he went through all that and at the end, He lifted up his hands and he praised God for healing his wife.

    15:07-15:10

And he praised God for the path that he had chosen for his wife.

    15:11-15:14

And he said, "This is not the end of my wife's testimony.

    15:15-15:33

"This is not the end of my testimony." Christians, church, a Christian suffering and praising God is single-handedly the most powerful thing we can do to further the kingdom of Christ.

    15:34-15:34

    Why?

    15:35-15:37

Because it doesn't make sense to an unsaved person.

    15:37-15:45

If you are suffering, and maybe you haven't suffered in that way, but I guarantee you, you've suffered in some ways.

    15:47-15:52

But I promise you, every time you suffer, God gives you a pulpit to preach from.

    15:52-15:59

And if you can do that, And you can find that pulpit wherever God has it, man, you can move mountains.

    16:01-16:06

When you suffer for Christ, that is the most powerful thing we can do.

    16:06-16:11

James chapter one tells us that, "Count it all joy when you go through diverse temptations." Why?

    16:12-16:16

Because God's not only strengthening you, but he's also bringing his glory out through your suffering.

    16:17-16:24

If you can praise God while you are going through hell on earth, God's glory is gonna come out.

    16:24-16:30

So you have to endure suffering and you have to praise God when you are going through that.

    16:31-16:33

That's how you preach the gospel when you're suffering.

    16:34-16:34

    Praise God through it.

    16:35-16:37

Preach the gospel even though God's putting you through a test.

    16:40-16:41

    Go back to verse 5.

    16:44-16:49

Always be sober minded, endure suffering, and do the work of an evangelist.

    16:52-16:52

    Evangelize.

    16:52-16:53

    That's my third point.

    16:56-16:56

    Evangelize.

    16:56-16:57

We all know what it means.

    16:57-16:58

    It means tell everybody.

    16:59-17:00

    Tell everybody about Christ.

    17:01-17:06

And if I can be completely transparent with you right now, this is the hardest thing for me to do.

    17:07-17:11

And I am probably the worst person in here at doing that.

    17:11-17:13

I am not good at evangelizing.

    17:14-17:15

    I'm not good.

    17:15-17:17

I often times shirk at the opportunity.

    17:18-17:19

    Just being honest.

    17:20-17:21

I'm not always great at this.

    17:22-17:24

And I gotta be better at it.

    17:24-17:25

We all have to be better at it.

    17:27-17:30

Because here's the thing, and this is kind of a two-part thing.

    17:31-17:38

When it comes to evangelizing, when you accepted Christ's free gift, Jesus died on the cross for us, was buried, and rose again.

    17:38-17:39

    That's the gospel story.

    17:41-17:48

When he did that and you accepted that free gift, you went, "God, okay, I wanna be in your family.

    17:48-17:55

"I wanna be a child for you." He says, "Great, you don't have to do anything for that, "to accept that, but now that you're mine, "here's what I need you to do.

    17:56-17:58

"You've gotta tell everybody about me.

    17:59-18:00

"You have to tell everybody your story.

    18:03-18:07

"You have to tell everybody." That is your duty as a Christian, is to tell everybody.

    18:09-18:14

And even though that's our duty, which it is, God commands us to do it, He did it in the Great Commission.

    18:15-18:17

Go out and tell everybody about me.

    18:19-18:26

And even though that's our duty, what oftentimes what we're bad at is making that our desire, making that our passion.

    18:29-18:31

It's just like, use my wife for example again.

    18:32-18:36

My wife is a big Eagles, Philadelphia Eagles fan.

    18:37-18:43

And that is very big point of, very big point of contention in our family.

    18:45-18:46

    But you know what?

    18:46-19:15

care. I mean she's fly, eagles fly every day. She loves the eagles and you know what she doesn't care if anybody else likes the Eagles. That's her team. That's her passion. When she talks about the Eagles she's passionate about it. She's not embarrassed about it. She doesn't care what you think about her. And she'll walk away going, "So? Nick Foles won the MVP a couple years ago. Carson Wentz is going to be hurt halfway through the season, but whatever.

    19:17-19:17

    She doesn't care.

    19:17-19:18

    She's passionate about it.

    19:21-19:23

And that's the same thing we have to have.

    19:24-19:28

Jesus Christ has to be so important to us that it just oozes out of us.

    19:29-19:32

And oftentimes, we're afraid because we're afraid of what people are going to think.

    19:34-19:34

    But why?

    19:36-19:42

This is single-handedly the most important thing that will happen to any human being is accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.

    19:45-19:48

And sometimes we're afraid to talk about it, because we're afraid of what people are gonna think about it.

    19:49-19:50

    I do the same thing.

    19:52-19:52

    I do.

    19:55-19:56

That's kind of an awkward conversation.

    19:57-19:58

    So what?

    19:59-20:01

They might think of me as a Jesus freak.

    20:01-20:01

    Great.

    20:04-20:04

    Great.

    20:07-20:18

And this goes back even to what I preached about last year, that if it's not necessarily a passion, and I'm preaching to myself on this, if it's not a passion for you, man, that's a problem with sanctification.

    20:19-20:28

So you should be so sanctified in your progress, in your sanctification, needs to be so advanced that you can't help it.

    20:28-20:35

You just, you try to talk about other things, but your passion is so much about Christ that you can't stop talking about it.

    20:35-20:36

It just continues to come out.

    20:39-20:45

And the best part about this is you don't have to dress up the gospel.

    20:46-20:56

I mean, if you think about it, if the gospel story happened in today's world, if there was a dad that gave up his life for his son to live, man, that would be a viral video on Facebook.

    20:56-20:57

That would be a viral video on everything.

    21:00-21:03

Because the story in itself is so powerful.

    21:03-21:06

The death, the burial, the resurrection of Christ.

    21:07-21:12

And Paul himself was encouraged that he himself didn't have to dress up the Gospel.

    21:12-21:18

Arguably one of the greatest preachers to ever walk the face of the planet was excited that he didn't have to dress this up.

    21:18-21:24

If we look at 1 Corinthians 1.17, it will be up on the screen for you.

    21:24-21:35

"For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power." In other words, don't dress it up.

    21:35-21:38

You don't have to have this great speech about it.

    21:38-21:41

You just have to tell it, because here's the thing.

    21:41-21:44

And here's a little cliche for you.

    21:45-21:47

If you try to dress it up, you're going to mess it up.

    21:49-21:55

But truthfully, get out of the way, just tell what the gospel did for you, just tell the gospel for what it is.

    21:55-21:56

    Don't sugarcoat it.

    21:57-21:58

    Don't apologize for it.

    21:58-21:59

    Just tell it.

    22:00-22:04

Get out of the way and speak the words that God put in the Bible.

    22:06-22:09

Preach the gospel and allow the gospel to work.

    22:11-22:21

My last point, going back to verse 5, always be sober minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, and lastly, fulfill your ministry.

    22:21-22:24

    Finish strong. Finish strong.

    22:27-22:29

And this is so important, church.

    22:31-22:48

Because if I said earlier, where I said, enduring suffering and suffering for Christ and being bold through your suffering is the most important or is the most powerful thing we can do to spread the gospel. Not finishing strong is the most detrimental thing we can do.

    22:50-23:12

Because why? Because we're showing to the outside world that this Christian walk, this Christian life that we live on is long. It's a marathon. Paul talks about it later on in the passage when he says, "I have fought the fight, I've finished the race. It wasn't a slow race, it was a long marathon. And at times it's grueling, and at times it's difficult. But we do it because we know the rewards that are going to come.

    23:14-23:59

Well the outside world isn't necessarily seeing those rewards. All they're seeing is the suffering and the agony. Well if we don't finish strong and we fall off, the unsaved world is going to sit there and go, "Why am I even going to start? You suffered for all this time and you went through all this defeat and this agony and you didn't even complete it. Why am I even going to step one foot on that track? Why do I want that in my life?" Finishing strong is so important and we see this time and time again of pastors, evangelists, people great Christian people and they fall.

    23:59-24:07

And here's the thing, anything and everything, those men or those women, whoever they are, everything they said could have been 100% accurate.

    24:08-24:12

But when they don't finish strong, everything they said is now void.

    24:14-24:20

Because what all the unsaved world is seeing is that they went, see, I told you it wouldn't work.

    24:21-24:22

I told you it wasn't gonna happen.

    24:23-24:24

    It's not worth it.

    24:25-24:26

    And we know it is.

    24:28-24:29

    We have to finish strong.

    24:29-24:36

You should be praying for the people that, on their human side, may be looking close to the end of their life.

    24:36-24:37

Pray for them to finish strong.

    24:38-24:43

Pray for the younger people that, again, humanistically, seem to have a long life ahead of them.

    24:44-24:48

Pray for them to continue to be strong through their Christian life.

    24:49-24:50

    And finish strong.

    24:51-24:53

Because if we don't, it's so detrimental.

    24:54-24:55

    It is so detrimental.

    24:58-25:01

We have to finish strong in preaching the gospel.

    25:03-25:07

I wanna leave you with a few practical tips before I end this sermon.

    25:10-25:11

Tips on how to preach the gospel.

    25:13-25:14

    Number one, get prepared.

    25:16-25:16

    Get prepared.

    25:17-25:21

Practice, practice what you're gonna say to somebody whenever the opportunity comes to preach the gospel.

    25:22-25:25

Practice it, just like Justin, Rich, Mike, and myself.

    25:25-25:28

I've rehearsed this thing a hundred times at this point.

    25:29-25:31

You might say it doesn't show, but.

    25:31-25:32

    (audience laughing)

    25:34-25:36

    No, rehearse it, practice it.

    25:36-25:37

Get in your mind what you're gonna talk about.

    25:38-25:39

Figure out the passages that you're gonna use.

    25:40-25:40

    Memorize.

    25:41-25:43

Kind of have a game plan put together.

    25:43-25:53

And don't, no matter what, don't ever, ever, ever be afraid if somebody asks you a question that you don't know, don't be afraid to say, "I don't know, let me get back to you." Don't try to just wing it.

    25:54-25:55

That's just going to get worse.

    25:56-25:58

I was told that when I was preaching one time.

    26:02-26:04

    Number two, ask other Christians.

    26:04-26:15

Reach out to mature Christians, whether it be the elders of this church, or Jeff, or other pastors that you may know, or people that you hold at a high value in your life.

    26:15-26:16

Ask them what their method is.

    26:17-26:18

    Lean on them.

    26:18-26:19

    Learn from them.

    26:21-26:27

Take those practical tips that they can give you and make that a part of your witnessing program.

    26:28-26:34

And lastly, pray for God's peace, because ultimately we're afraid.

    26:35-26:37

We're afraid of what people might think.

    26:39-26:41

We're nervous about what people might say about us.

    26:44-26:47

Pray for God's peace. Pray for God to open the door for you to walk through.

    26:49-26:51

And pray for God to force you through that door.

    26:53-26:56

When God opens the door for you to share the gospel, step through it.

    26:57-26:59

And God will give you the words to say, and God will give you the peace for it.

    27:02-27:03

    So pray for God's peace.

    27:05-27:08

And as I close, I want every single person to think about this.

    27:08-27:12

I want you to think back to when you were saved.

    27:13-27:25

Whether that was a long process or a short process, I want you to think back to that point when you said to God, "I accept your free gift and I want to start following you." However that is, I want you to think back to that.

    27:27-27:30

Now I want you to think of the person that helped get you there.

    27:31-27:40

Whoever that may be. Maybe it was a multitude of people. Maybe it was one singular person. Whoever got you to, helped you see the light. I want you to think about that person.

    27:42-27:49

Now I want you to think about if that person up and didn't tell you about the gospel.

    27:51-27:54

Think about if that person didn't step through the door that God opened up for you.

    27:56-27:58

That should shake you in your boots.

    27:59-28:11

Where would you be if that person hadn't shared the gospel to you, if that person hadn't stepped through the door and did exactly what God was asking them to do?

    28:12-28:12

    Where would you be?

    28:15-28:19

And every time we don't walk through the door, it's exactly what we're doing.

    28:22-28:25

Is that person ultimately responsible for their own salvation?

    28:26-28:26

    Yeah.

    28:27-28:28

But you know what, you might have a hand in it.

    28:31-28:34

And when God opens that opportunity, He's commanding you, talk to this person.

    28:35-28:40

And when you say no to God, man, that's a bad thing.

    28:42-28:50

So I challenge you, leave here today, start preaching the gospel, not just with your words, but with your actions.

    28:50-28:52

Allow those two to line up.

    28:52-28:55

They must line up if we wanna be effective preachers of the gospel.

    28:57-29:00

Live it out every day, unafraid.

    29:01-29:02

    Let's pray.

    29:04-29:06

Heavenly Father, we just thank you for this day.

    29:08-29:12

God, I ask you that if there's a person in here today that doesn't know the Gospel story.

    29:14-29:18

Let us practice what I just shared today.

    29:18-29:19

    Let's preach to that person.

    29:19-29:21

Let's tell them the Gospel story.

    29:22-29:25

Don't let them leave here today without knowing you, God.

    29:26-29:32

God, I ask you to please allow this church to be bold in our community, in Wexford.

    29:34-29:35

    Allow us to be bold.

    29:35-29:38

Let everybody know what our church is all about.

    29:39-29:40

    Preach the gospel, God.

    29:42-29:47

And allow each and every person to leave here today and take this to their environment that they live in on a regular basis.

    29:49-29:50

And be bold in that environment.

    29:52-29:59

God, because we are nobodies, that you chose to be a part of you.

    30:01-30:03

And you chose to use us to further your kingdom.

    30:05-30:06

Father, let that be our motivation.

    30:07-30:09

Please bless this day and bless this church.

    30:10-30:10

    Amen.

Sermon Notes (PDF): BLANK
Hint: Highlight blanks above for answers!

  • 00:00-00:12

All right, good morning And we certainly want people to be in involved in small groups and maybe I'll have a video in a week or two Letting you know about mine Can I have the first slide, please?

    00:17-00:31

So last week we talked a little bit about the church at Ephesus and We talked about the beginning of a great church and some of the problems that were being faced and this week I'm going to talk about Timothy and his mission in this church.

    00:32-00:32

    Next slide.

    00:35-00:52

So, just to get oriented, what this map shows is the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, and the travel that Paul had, and right in the middle of it is Ephesus and Miletus.

    00:52-01:01

And what we saw last week was that Paul had established a church at Ephesus that was one of the greatest churches ever.

    01:01-01:11

He spent almost three years teaching until all the area that is now Turkey, which the Romans called Asia, heard the word of the Lord because of this.

    01:11-01:24

However, we also saw that later Paul came back and he sent for the elders at Ephesus to come to Miletus and had a message for them as well.

    01:24-01:28

And the message was a terrifying message and we're going to talk about that today.

    01:29-01:31

But before we do, let's open up in a word of prayer.

    01:31-01:46

Our Devotee Father, I pray that we would have insight into your Word, and that we would understand what you would have us to know, and that we will search your Word to make sure that these things are true.

    01:49-03:40

What you see is, also in this picture on the far left, is Rome, and we know what happened with the Roman Catholicism and its influence, but I'd like to focus today on Ephesus. Now the thing that I wanted to remind you of is last week we read a little bit about the message that Paul gave to the elders from Ephesus after he'd spent three years there teaching. And what he said was very interesting and I'll just read this for you, it's not in your outlined it's in Acts chapter 20 verse 28 through 30. He says, "Be on your guard for yourself and for all the flock among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the flock or the Church of God which he purchased with his own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. And from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them." And so what we see is the church had been attacked from the outside because of a riot and now it was going to be attacked from the inside. And the terrifying thing is that the attack would come from among the leaders themselves. Who were they? How were they to be defended what was going to happen in this church to preserve the truth and Paul gives in this advice therefore be on the alert remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease admonishing you with tears and now I commend you to God and the word of his grace which is able to build you up and give you inheritance among the saints. He didn't tell them who they were.

    03:40-03:47

He said, "I commend you to God and the word of His grace." That was it.

    03:48-04:00

And so, the greatest church that had ever been seen up to that point in time was under a warning, a prophecy that a disaster was coming.

    04:01-04:09

And what we pointed out last week is every time God does a great work, Satan opposes it and attacks it.

    04:09-04:17

It has happened in every church that has ever been founded, is that Satan attacks.

    04:17-04:26

This church has the potential of having a tremendous influence throughout our area, but it will also be attacked.

    04:27-04:33

What do we do? How do we expect and prepare for this attack?

    04:33-04:42

Well, this brings us to the story of Timothy, and I've given a detailed outline on the back of your bulletin.

    04:43-04:53

Now, the reason is that almost every word that I'm going to say is on here, so it's not an outline in a broad sense, it's an outline in a detailed sense.

    04:53-04:55

And we'll spend a little bit of time going through that.

    04:56-05:05

Now, if you have a pew Bible, or one that you took from the back, We'll be looking at 1 and 2 Timothy as our major text.

    05:05-05:12

That begins on page 642, so that you can put your marker at that point, 642.

    05:13-05:23

But I'd like to begin today with an introduction of Timothy, which is in Acts chapter 16, verses one through three, that is on page 601.

    05:24-05:25

    601.

    05:36-06:18

So in Acts chapter 16, and we talked about the book of Acts giving a description of all the places that Paul had gone, it says, "And he came to Derbe and to Lystra. And behold, certain disciples there named Timothy. This is the first time Timothy is mentioned. He's the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer but his father was Greek. So his mother was Jewish and his father was Greek. And he was well spoken of by the brethren who enlisted in an Iconium. And Paul wanted this man to go with him. And what's interesting is that we never hear of Timothy's father again.

    06:19-06:33

I don't know what happened to him, but you never see him and what you see is that Paul acts as his father and talks to about Timothy as his son and decided to bring him up and to train him.

    06:34-06:43

And so Paul wanted this man to go with him. And he took him and he circumcised him because of the Jews who were within those parts for they all knew that his father was Greek.

    06:43-06:56

And so Timothy, even though he had a Jewish mother, and we don't know where his father was, had never been circumcised, never really followed the Jewish tradition in the way of a Hebrew male.

    06:56-07:04

And so Paul circumcised him just to, because Timothy was going to be traveling with him in that concession.

    07:05-07:23

Now, on the other hand, Titus, who is another individual that followed Paul and traveled with him, Paul said, "I refuse to have him circumcised and to give in from that standpoint." But in this case, young Timothy was circumcised and then spent the rest of his life following Paul around.

    07:25-07:30

Now, let's move to 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    07:31-07:35

And as I said, we'll spend quite a bit of time in 1 and 2 Timothy.

    07:37-10:13

So in 2 Timothy chapter 1 and verse 5 it says, "For I'm mindful of your sincere faith which is in you, which dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your father your mother Eunice, and I am sure that is in within you as well. That gives us even more confirmation that he was actually raised by his mother and his grandmother. And have we seen families where the mother is struggling, we don't know where the father is, the grandmother comes in and helps raise the child. This is probably what Timothy faced. It was the grandmother who really was the person of faith and came to help her daughter under difficult circumstances. Timothy had the circumcision. The grandmother had the circumstances and helped to raise this boy Timothy and Paul saw that he was without a father and a father figure and had compassion for this kid and decided to bring him along with him. But if you back up into verse 4, Paul in writing to him as he says, "longing to see you as I recall your tears that I might be filled with joy." So Timothy was emotionally somewhat of a weak person who was subject to crying and he was someone who was often tearful. In 1st Timothy chapter 5, and if you just back up a couple pages in verse 23, he gives us a little bit more insight into Timothy. So now Paul is writing his first letter to Timothy and he points out in verse 23, he says, "No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments." So Timothy was not only emotionally weak and subject to tears, but he was also physically weak and had stomach ailments and sicknesses. He was a weakling and a sick little boy that really had not had a father to raise him to look after him and that's who Timothy was. But one of the most amazing passages is in 1 Corinthians chapter 16 because Paul never says this about anybody anywhere else in the Bible.

    10:14-10:18

It's unbelievable. It's on page 625 if you're looking for it.

    10:18-10:26

But let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 16 to get a little bit more insight into the kind of person Timothy was.

    10:27-10:35

1 Corinthians chapter 16. It's the last chapter in 1 Corinthians.

    10:38-10:40

    chapter 16 and verse 10.

    10:44-10:57

And Paul says to the Corinthians, "Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without cause to be afraid, for he is doing the Lord's work as I am also.

    10:58-11:24

Let no one therefore despise him, but send him on his way in peace, so that he may come to me, for I expect him with a brethren." Has anybody else been given a warning, "Now I'm going to send somebody, but he's very timid, and he's afraid, and you're going to scare him, so please be very gentle with Timothy." That's what it says. It's unbelievable.

    11:25-11:30

And he says, "Let no one despise him." What kind of a kid was this?

    11:30-12:01

He was such a weakling and such a loser that when he came with a message from Paul, everybody said this kid's a loser He probably started crying I'm serious. That's what it says. This is that So that's that that's a little insight into who this person Timothy was so he was afraid and despised So our first set of the outline his mother was Jewish. His father was Greek He was raised by his mother and probably primarily by his grandmother.

    12:02-12:07

Paul picked him up and took care of him, was a father figure to him.

    12:09-12:11

He was remembered by Paul for his tears.

    12:12-12:19

Timothy was frequently sick and Timothy was someone who was afraid and despised by others.

    12:26-12:31

Now Paul that there's a variety of things that happened as Paul trained him.

    12:32-12:41

One of them, and we're not going to necessarily go there, is in 2 Corinthians 1, verses 1 and 19.

    12:41-12:48

What it tells us is that Paul, during his teaching, had Timothy and Silas and other people help with the Bible teaching.

    12:48-12:51

So we know Timothy was able to teach the Bible.

    12:53-13:07

Going back to Acts, and we're going to be working through this section of Acts again, Acts chapter 17, and I'm going to read verses 14 through 15, and then chapter 18, verse 5.

    13:08-13:22

Acts chapter 17, beginning in verse 14, it says, "And immediately the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea, and Silas and Timothy remained there.

    13:23-13:33

Now those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens and received a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible without delay.

    13:33-13:52

So this story is Paul's missionary trip and he was in Thessalonica and he went from Berea to Thessalonica and was threatened and they had to take him away and send him on to Athens and then Paul and Silas who were caring for him stayed to take care of the business there and then we're going to go catch up with Paul in the future.

    13:52-13:59

And so these men were working with Paul as well.

    13:59-14:28

And chapter 18, verse 5, it says, "When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the Word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ." And so in that time of history, It was a tremendous amount of effort to take care of your daily needs, because they didn't have microwaves, believe it or not, and they didn't have other conveniences, so it was a big effort.

    14:28-14:38

And Silas and Timothy helped Paul by taking care of those physical needs and preparing for him so he could dedicate himself to teaching the Word.

    14:40-14:43

So Silas and Timothy cared for Paul's physical needs.

    14:44-14:47

If we go forward another chapter, chapter 19.

    14:47-15:10

Now we looked at this last week and this describes the incredible growth of the church in Ephesus and it talks about the riot and the disaster that occurred when the people that were taking care of the temple of Artemis and selling the little souvenirs were losing all their business and they started a riot.

    15:10-15:23

Right in the middle of this there's an interesting verse that I'd like to draw your attention to today And this is verses 19, excuse me, verses 21 and 22.

    15:24-15:53

It says, "Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Archaea, saying, 'I have been there, and I must see Rome.' And having sent to Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while." So now we see Timothy here again being sent ahead to make preparation and get ready for Paul so when he came he could devote himself to teaching.

    15:54-15:58

So this is what Paul had trained Timothy to do.

    15:58-16:12

He taught them the Word and taught him about how to care or prepare for Paul so that when he came to a new city he was able to immediately start teaching and there was no time wasted in trying to support himself.

    16:12-16:15

and these people played a very important role early on.

    16:16-16:24

Now let's go forward to chapter 20, because Timothy was with Paul at a very critical time.

    16:25-16:42

And what we see in verse 4, it says, "And he was accompanied by," and he lists a number of people that Paul was traveling with, And third from the last, you see, Timothy is along with this group of people.

    16:43-16:44

Now, why do I point that out?

    16:46-17:09

Because that was the group that stopped in Miletus and heard Paul give the prophecy that there would be savage wolves attacking that church from the inside, and that from among the elders, people would arise, saying perverse things, and tearing the church apart, breaking it up, and destroying the church.

    17:09-17:16

So Paul, in speaking to the elders, had another audience there, and Timothy was there listening, and what was he thinking?

    17:16-17:27

He thought, "This is a disaster. This is a disaster, and the last thing I want to do is have a part of this," when he heard about the problems coming to Ephesus.

    17:29-17:36

So now let's get to the heart of the teaching today in 1 Timothy.

    17:37-17:47

So Paul sent two letters to Timothy about five years apart, and the first letter he sent was called 1 Timothy, and it's on page 624 of your outline.

    17:47-17:56

And let's turn to 1 Timothy, and I just wanted to point out a couple things in 1 Timothy that...

    17:59-18:01

    highlight the problem.

    18:02-18:32

So 1 Timothy chapter 1, the very first thing that Paul points out in verse 3, he says, "As I urged you upon my departure from Macedonia," this is one of Paul's later trips, "Remain on at Ephesus in order that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines." Oh my stars. Can you imagine Timothy?

    18:33-18:39

He knew that it was going to be a disaster, the church was about to be attacked.

    18:39-18:41

The beginning of it had already occurred.

    18:42-18:46

People were starting to teach alternate doctors and twisting the truth.

    18:46-18:51

and twisting things and tearing the church apart by destroying its foundation.

    18:52-19:00

And Paul urged him to stay there and teach these certain men, not to teach false doctrines.

    19:02-19:05

    Verses 18 and 19 of chapter 1.

    19:07-19:40

He tells Timothy, "I have a suggestion for you." No, I'm sorry. He says, "This I command, this command I entrust you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecy previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, and keeping the faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regarding to their faith." What was the effect of these false teachings?

    19:41-19:53

Faith is shipwrecked. People's spiritual lives are confused and destroyed and the effectiveness of God's Word is lost if you grab on to a false doctrine.

    19:54-20:01

And Paul commanded Timothy to fight the good fight, to keep the faith with a good conscience.

    20:01-20:19

He also told him in chapter 6, another important thing, and I can't go through this whole passage, but I'm going to give you a little bit of flavor of it.

    20:20-21:02

In verses 3 to 5, it says, "If anyone advocates a different doctrine than Timothy was to teach, and does not agree with sound words, which are those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with doctrines that conform to godliness, he has conceded and understands nothing, but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and he goes on and describes that in more detail, constant friction between men of depraved minds and deprived of the truth who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

    21:03-22:44

So again, Paul says, "Don't get involved in fights with these people because you're going to get sucked into philosophical arguments and stay away from it." Instead, he points out in verses 11 and 12, "Flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness, fight the good fight of faith, take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and that you made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses." So Paul leaves Timothy at Ephesus to teach sound doctrine, to deal with a false doctrine, to fight the fight, not to argue with other people, but to teach the Word. Now the next section is one of the saddest passages in the entire Bible. 2 Timothy is, in my view, even worse than Lamentations. It is a terribly disappointing letter that Paul sent to Timothy about five years later. The first thing in Timothy's failure is, you know found out? After five years at Ephesus, he found out he wasn't Paul. He was not an apostle. He didn't have apostolic authority. People despised him. Just because Paul sent him there didn't mean that people didn't despise him. Let's look what happened to poor Timothy.

    22:46-23:00

Verse 6, "For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of the hands." What happened to his gift? Why does he have to kindle it again?

    23:00-23:05

Because it's burned out. Timothy stopped using his gift.

    23:07-23:09

You don't restart something unless it's stopped.

    23:10-23:22

It's like a campfire when you get up in the morning that's almost completely burned out, and there's a few ashes, and if you gently blow on it, you can get a little bit of a flame and hopefully start a fire going again.

    23:22-23:23

    That was Timothy.

    23:24-23:27

Timothy was a burned-out campfire who was done.

    23:29-23:30

    What had happened?

    23:32-23:42

What had happened in that previous five years where Timothy went with great confidence and a strong letter of instruction from Paul, and instead, it was a disaster?

    23:44-23:59

Look at verse 7. "For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline." What was the problem? Timothy had shrunk back. He was timid. He was too timid.

    24:01-24:14

And the power of God is not one of timidity. He was relying on his own ability, his own sense of who he was and the authority that he had from being training with Paul, and it was a disaster.

    24:17-24:18

Look at verses 8 and 12.

    24:20-24:32

"Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me, his prisoner." In verse 12, "For this reason I also suffered these things, but I am not ashamed.

    24:33-24:42

For I know who I have believed and convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted him against that day." What happened to Timothy?

    24:43-24:50

Those false teachers had beaten him so badly that he was ashamed of who he was and his association with Paul.

    24:50-24:53

And Paul goes on and says, "Everybody in Asia has turned against me.

    24:53-24:58

These false teachers have turned the entire church against me and against you.

    24:58-25:01

And now you're ashamed of even knowing me.

    25:01-25:05

You're not using your gifts. You're afraid and timid and you become useless.

    25:08-25:25

In verse 8, the last half of verse 8, Paul says, "Join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God." He was afraid to suffer. He'd had a little taste of being beaten and he was afraid and withdrew.

    25:25-25:27

He just, he did not want to suffer.

    25:28-25:49

And verse 13, he says, "Retain the standard of sound words, which you have heard from me in the faith and love for which in Jesus Christ," verse 14, "guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us the treasure which has been entrusted to you." Timothy had stopped teaching sound doctrine.

    25:50-26:02

He was afraid to teach the Word because people were making fun of him, they were ridiculing him, They were embarrassing him and he became a complete failure.

    26:03-26:10

He was not only physically a loser, spiritually and in this responsibility, he proved to be a loser.

    26:16-26:16

    But we're not done yet.

    26:18-26:20

    Why did Paul choose Timothy?

    26:21-26:34

Why did Paul send Timothy to this church where he knew that the most vicious attack that Satan could muster was about to hit that church, and he sent Timothy?

    26:35-26:36

    Do you know why?

    26:37-26:48

Well, if you turn to page 637, which is Philippians chapter 2, Paul gives us a little insight into Timothy that we may have missed.

    26:49-26:51

And I certainly would have missed.

    26:54-27:04

Paul says to the Philippians, "But I hope in the Lord to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I might be encouraged when I learn of your condition." Now listen to verse 20.

    27:07-27:20

"For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.

    27:21-27:35

I have no one else who cares about people." In verse 21 it says, "For they all seek after their own interest, not those of Christ.

    27:37-27:45

But you know of His proven worth, that He has served me for the furtherance of the gospel like a child." serving his father.

    27:49-27:53

Do you see what Paul saw in this weak man?

    27:55-28:03

    Let's look again at 1 Corinthians 4, in verses 16 and 17.

    28:20-28:56

Paul says to them, "I exhort you, therefore, be imitators of me. For this reason I have sent you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways for which in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church." So Timothy not only knew how to teach, he knew Paul's way and how to live a Christian life, how to care for people, and was someone who loved the Lord and he loved people, and Paul could trust him to demonstrate how a Christian should live their life.

    29:03-29:08

Now, 2 Timothy doesn't end with an outline of these disasters.

    29:09-29:11

This is a sad book as well.

    29:12-29:21

At the very end, Paul says in chapter 4, verses 7 and 8, he says, "I've fought the good fight, I've finished the course, I've kept the faith.

    29:22-29:36

In the future there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness with the Lord the righteous judge will award to me on that day, not only to me, but all those who love his appearing." And indeed, this was the end of Paul's ministry.

    29:38-29:38

    He's in prison.

    29:40-29:41

    His sentence was due.

    29:41-29:44

There was going to be no escape in Paul's mind.

    29:44-29:44

    That's it.

    29:46-29:52

He had nothing left, no one like Timothy, and Timothy had been a complete failure and he wrote this letter to try to urge him.

    29:53-29:59

So how does Paul help restore Timothy to the man of God that Paul was expecting?

    30:00-30:20

Back in 2 Timothy, chapter 1, verse 2, he says, "Timothy, my beloved son." Timothy is a man who apparently had no earthly father that was actually a father to him.

    30:21-30:44

Paul had become his father and doesn't say my father in the faith or my son in the faith he says my beloved son because Paul had raised him as a son. In verse three he says I thank God whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did is I constantly remember you in my prayer night and day.

    30:46-30:59

Timothy knew Paul and what God had done through Paul, and the knowledge that Paul was praying for him night and day had to be an encouragement to him.

    31:00-31:03

He was not abandoned. God was with him.

    31:04-31:12

In verse 5, we looked at this before, "For I am mindful of this sincere faith within you." It wasn't fake.

    31:13-31:25

Timothy, even though he had looked at himself as someone who was going to take on this challenge and failed, did love God. He did want what was right.

    31:26-31:33

He just got to focus on himself and what he was going to do, and got beaten severely, and was afraid and was withdrawn.

    31:34-31:35

    But his faith was sincere.

    31:36-32:03

Chapter 2. Paul gives him the same advice he gave him before. Don't argue with the false teachers. Don't get entangled in these controversial issues because you're gonna be torn to shreds. There are no rules when they're talking to you and they're smart and they're manipulative and they're political and you're just gonna be drawn into this thing. It'll be a disaster.

    32:04-32:09

That's what he said in 1 Timothy. In 2 Timothy, he points it out in a different way.

    32:09-32:16

    2 Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1 and 2.

    32:17-32:23

"You therefore, my son, be strong." We talked about last week. What does it mean to be strong?

    32:25-32:29

And how do you do it? Well, the answer is you just suck it up and you're strong.

    32:29-32:33

You're going to stand, you make a determined effort that you're going to do no matter what.

    32:33-32:36

not backing down anymore, you're going to be strong.

    32:36-32:42

And that's what Paul told them, be strong in the grace that is in Jesus Christ, not in yourself.

    32:44-32:46

You're not being strong in yourself.

    32:46-32:47

    Timothy, you're a weakling.

    32:48-32:56

Everybody sees you as a loser, but you need to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

    32:57-33:03

And the things which you have learned from me in the presence of many witnesses, These entrust to who?

    33:05-33:09

Faithful men who will be able to teach others.

    33:10-33:18

Timothy, I want you to redirect your ministry to where I told you to do it in the first place.

    33:20-33:25

Just teach faithful men who can teach others.

    33:25-33:30

Those who want to grow and to learn the Word and they can pass it on to others.

    33:30-33:31

    That's what you're to do.

    33:31-33:36

Teach faithful men. You can teach. Find faithful men and teach them.

    33:42-33:45

    Chapter 3, verse 16.

    33:47-33:48

    Very well-known verse.

    33:50-34:19

Paul reminds Timothy that all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be equipped, may be adequate, equipped for every good work." What is Timothy's secret weapon? It's the scriptures. It's the scriptures that Timothy is to focus on, and that's it.

    34:21-34:23

Teach the scriptures to faithful men.

    34:25-34:25

    And you know why?

    34:26-34:27

    Because Timothy is weak.

    34:31-34:45

But the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of bone and marrow, to the soul and spirit.

    34:49-35:09

Hebrews says, "Behold, all things are laid open and bare to those with whom we have to do." If Timothy teaches the scripture, there is nobody that can stand against God's Word.

    35:10-35:13

Paul goes on in this same passage.

    35:19-35:28

He says, "Be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of your ministry." Let me read beginning actually in verse 1.

    35:29-35:41

Chapter 4, verse 1, "I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is the judge of the living and the dead, and by the appearing of his kingdom." That's a pretty strong charge, isn't it?

    35:42-35:44

Charging him in the presence of God.

    35:45-35:53

Verse 2, "Preach the word." Timothy, stop arguing and preach the word.

    35:55-35:57

Be ready in season and out of season.

    35:59-36:07

Now Timothy said, "Well, you know, when I was in Corinth, people like to listen to my Bible studies, but here they don't want to hear me.

    36:07-36:08

    Well, you know what?

    36:08-36:09

    That's out of season.

    36:09-36:12

So when it's out of season, what are you to do?

    36:12-36:13

    Preach the word.

    36:15-36:18

It doesn't matter what the circumstances are.

    36:18-36:20

It doesn't matter what's going on around.

    36:20-36:23

He says, "Preach the word, in season and out season.

    36:23-36:42

"Reprove, rebuke, exhort with great patience "and all instruction, for time will come "when they will not endure sound doctrine, "but wanting to have their ears tickle, they will accumulate for themselves teacher in accordance with their own desire, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

    36:42-37:11

But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." So that was the advice that Paul gave Timothy, who restored him by pointing out he loved him as a son, that he prayed for him night and day, that he had a sincere faith that was a true faith, and that he needed to preach the word in season and out of season.

    37:12-37:13

Well, that's the end of 2 Timothy.

    37:15-37:16

    Timothy's never mentioned again.

    37:18-37:26

What a sad book, where Timothy had completely failed, and Paul had poured his life into this church.

    37:26-37:27

    Everybody had turned away.

    37:28-37:31

He knew that there was going to be vicious attacks from inside.

    37:33-37:40

He sent the only one who really cared for people, gave him clear instructions, and Timothy failed.

    37:47-37:53

Well, Paul dropped a little hint as to how victory could be won.

    37:54-38:07

Back up just a page or two in 1 Timothy, and I want to read a verse in 2 Timothy, I want to read a verse in 2 Timothy 3 that is very, very revealing.

    38:10-38:41

2 Timothy in chapter 3, as Paul in the first part of chapter 3 talks about how bad the false teachers are, And then he points out in verses 8 and 9, "Just as Janice and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men will also oppose the truth." Well, Paul, I knew that. I know that there are people that are opposing the truth. They're men of depraved mind, rejected as regards to the faith.

    38:41-38:42

    Yeah, I know that.

    38:44-38:59

But, they will not make further progress, for their folly will be obvious to all, so as those two men came to be.

    39:01-39:03

How could these people be opposed?

    39:05-39:22

You teach the Scriptures, and when the people understand what the Scripture says, when they've studied the Word and been taught the Scripture, it becomes obvious why the false teachers are false and where the lie is, and everybody recognizes they're false teachers, and they don't follow them.

    39:25-39:27

That's it. They're exposed as false.

    39:28-39:30

And as soon as everybody knows they're false, they're finished.

    39:32-39:33

    Did you know that?

    39:33-39:37

But the only people that can make that are ones who actually know what the truth is.

    39:37-39:43

If you know what the truth is, the folly of the false teachers are exposed and they're finished.

    39:44-39:48

That's the secret right there, hidden in the middle of chapter 3.

    39:49-39:51

That's what happens. Their folly becomes known to all.

    39:54-39:59

Well, Timothy's not mentioned again, but I'd like you to turn to Revelation chapter 2.

    40:06-40:09

Revelation chapter 2 was written by Apostle John.

    40:10-40:20

He had been exiled to an island off the coast of Turkey near Ephesus.

    40:20-40:23

He was late in the first century.

    40:25-40:30

Timothy, it turned out, had been martyred probably around 97 AD.

    40:33-41:04

So, John writes a letter, and in Revelation chapter 2, he writes this, "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write, The one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this, and listen carefully to what he says about the church, because this is not written to the elders, this is written to the people.

    41:06-41:23

"I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance and that you cannot endure evil men." How in the world did they knew who the evil men were?

    41:24-42:08

He goes on and says, "You put to the test those who called themselves apostles." So Timothy was a little runt that was sent by Paul who was despised to try to oppose people who claim to be apostles and outrank Timothy and they were eloquent and they had all kinds of philosophies and interesting things that they were saying to pull people away from from God and this church. And And it says, "They put to the test those who called themselves apostles, and they were not.

    42:10-42:26

And you found them to be false, and you have persevered and have endured for My name's sake, and have not grown weary." How did they know to put these men to the test? And what was the test?

    42:29-43:06

Well, they found the apostles were false and the test was the scripture. Did what they say match with scripture or not? And they could put them to the test because on one hand they heard the apostle but the other hand they knew what? They knew the scripture. Timothy must have listened to the advice that Paul gave him and gotten his strength together and found some men that he was able to begin to teach. And he taught them because they were able to teach others. And they did love the Lord. They did want to know what the truth was. He taught them the truth.

    43:07-43:32

He taught them how to search the scriptures. He taught them how to test doctrines to find out if they were true or if they were false. The people of the church started saying, "Wait a minute. What you're saying is not in Scripture." And they've showed from Scripture that the false teachers were false, they were exposed, the folly of their false philosophies and doctrines was made evident to everybody.

    43:33-43:45

And it says right here that the whole church now is in a position where they could test anybody, no matter how acclaimed they were, according to the Scripture, because they had to know the Scripture.

    43:47-43:50

So how can a disaster be averted in this church?

    43:51-43:52

    We better know the scripture.

    43:54-44:14

And that better be what we're teaching in small groups so that we can go through passage by passage and understand what the scripture says and what it doesn't say because I guarantee you, Satan is on the march and you're going to be bombarded with all kinds of confusing things and when it's confusing and murky and you don't know what people are talking about, you've got the scripture.

    44:14-44:21

And if you know it, you have clarity, you'll do the right thing, you'll put people to the test, and you'll find out whether or not it's true or false.

    44:21-44:27

And if you do, you'll be able to be... you'll be saved.

    44:28-44:32

You'll be saved from the disasters of following a false teacher.

    44:33-44:40

And boy, we've seen so much shipwreck and disaster in the Christian church because of false teachers that nobody understands.

    44:40-44:45

Nobody can see that what they're doing is false and they're pulling people away from Christ.

    44:45-45:01

And nobody seems to know. They just wander along like lemmings, instead of being sheep, listening to the voice of the true shepherd, and not following false teachers, but following the true shepherd, because they know the voice of the shepherd, they know what's right and wrong, and they know the scriptures.

    45:02-45:06

So the church was saved. The church was saved.

    45:10-45:13

Now that story of Timothy is an amazing story.

    45:15-45:23

There's lots of things that are kind of inferred as you look at different parts of scripture about what he was as a man, and he wasn't much of a man.

    45:24-45:36

He was emotionally weak, he was physically weak, he was despised by other people, he was afraid, he was timid, but he was with Paul for a while and learned Paul's ways, and you want to learn how to do? You learn how to follow Christ.

    45:37-46:07

and he learned to love people and he knew the scriptures and you know what that made him? That made him number one in Paul's sight and he was the only person that could be successful in the church at Ephesus. But you know what happened to him? He must have got the idea that he was like Paul and he was somebody else and he was gonna come in there and straighten things up and he got beaten severely, so bad that he just got discouraged and quit.

    46:08-46:09

    And you know what?

    46:09-46:14

There's a lot of people here who have been in other churches that have been beaten severely and quit.

    46:17-46:19

You know what the message Paul has for you?

    46:20-46:30

Be strong, suck it up and be strong and study the word so that you know right from wrong.

    46:32-46:50

And what we see in Revelation is that however the message got out, there's evidence that the people knew the Word, and those false teachers and vicious wolves that came in were tested by Scripture and they could not stand.

    46:51-46:58

Their folly became evident, the trickery was gone, the deceit was exposed, and they were finished.

    46:59-47:01

But you know, it doesn't end here.

    47:04-47:11

The training of the people in Ephesus came to populate the whole area of Turkey and Asia.

    47:12-47:18

And some of the greatest church fathers who clarified doctrine came from that legacy.

    47:20-47:26

As a matter of fact, there was one who turned out to be in Ephesus about 140 AD.

    47:27-49:55

and he wrote a famous letter to the the the bishop at Rome that said we understand that you're claiming to be the head of all the churches and you know he said but you know what we're going to do we refuse to follow tradition we refuse to follow any man we will follow only scripture and the teaching of the Apostles. He was a minor person, not much is known about him, but he was at Ephesus and was about 65 years old at that time, so he knew Timothy. And the other leaders in that area of Asia joined with him and sent that letter, and the bishop at Rome was furious. He was outraged and tried to excommunicate everyone in Asia that wouldn't bow down to him. And there was a first crisis and finally they said, the guy in Rome, he said, "For sake of peace, settle down." And so that didn't happen. But crisis after crisis and error after error that came up in the Christian Church, there were people from all other areas of the world that were confused and got twisted in their study of Scripture, but the area of Asia remained absolutely convinced that it has to be Scripture alone and the teaching of apostles, period. And that legacy changed the entire church and that area remained a center of truth for 400 years. What we know about studying the Scriptures and the Scriptures alone and not following the tradition of men or the authority of someone who puts themselves up as an apostle or a leader or some other thing and isn't following Scripture comes from here. That's the only place where that really was clear and taught and you know what the legacy is? This church today. This church today is based on the Scriptures as the authority of God and that's what we follow. It is an independent church, it's independent from other men, but it's not independent from God, it's directly through scriptures we follow that legacy.

    49:56-50:46

That was the clarity that Timothy taught and the legacy of what he established in Ephesus when all of Asia had turned away from Paul and his teaching, when it looked like it was a disaster, when he had personally failed, he fell back on the one thing that was still left and that's an irresistible force and a weapon that Satan cannot stand against, which is the scripture. So I hope you've learned a little bit about Timothy, who from a human standpoint wasn't much of a man. In a disastropher background, he was emotionally and physically weak, despised by other people, but he had something that changed the world.

    50:49-50:55

Because Paul was gone, and I'm sure God would have worked through someone else, but he worked through Timothy.

    50:57-51:05

And the keys were that he truly cared about other people, he knew the Scriptures, and It was the scriptures alone.

    51:06-51:16

And the people he taught learned how to put to the test anyone teaching any doctrine to find out if it was true or if it's false.

    51:17-51:22

And be determined and strong that no matter what, they're going to stand on the truth.

    51:23-51:29

Now what I'll tell you is this church is going to be attacked because that is the pattern over and over again.

    51:32-51:35

Does anyone know how to prepare for that attack now?

    51:37-51:40

Do you know what to do in preparation for what Satan has planned for you?

    51:42-51:43

Do you know what to do?

    51:48-51:49

    Get in the Word.

    51:50-51:52

    Learn what the Scripture says.

    51:53-51:54

You say, "Well, you know, this isn't a good time.

    51:55-52:51

"Well, that's out of season." And Paul says, "Preach the Word out of season." And they say, "Well, you know, this is, have some time, well that's also a good time because that's in season. So like I said last week, I'm trained as a teacher and not as a preacher, but this is a message that I think this church needs to hear because in addition to all the other activities and going on, Satan's at work and what I wanted to talk about is the core of what makes a great church, who's opposing it, and the secret way, and it shouldn't be secret, but the way that God has prepared to defend his church, to defend the truth, and to have an impact on the rest of the world.

    52:53-52:54

    Thank you.

  • 00:00-00:08

Well, good morning everyone. I'm Dave Whitcomb. They keep calling me Dr. Whitcomb, which few people do. You can call me Dave.

    00:10-00:17

So I'm very excited to be here today and to be able to share some things out of God's Word.

    00:17-00:23

Now, I'm not a preacher. I'm a teacher. So I'm going to use a lectern and we'll have an outline.

    00:24-00:28

But what I want to talk about today is extremely important.

    00:29-00:31

And some of the things you're going to hear today you've never heard before.

    00:32-00:34

And I want you to study your Bible afterwards.

    00:34-00:41

I have a detailed outline so you can go back and see whether or not the things that we're discussing are true.

    00:42-00:52

Now, the other thing I want to point out is that the church that we're going to be studying over the next two weeks is the church in Ephesus.

    00:52-00:56

And this is one of the most amazing churches in the New Testament.

    00:56-01:00

It's amazing because of what happened at this church.

    01:00-01:13

And I'm going to be telling you a story of the church of Ephesus and how it rose to be one of the greatest churches ever and how it was attacked by Satan and almost destroyed.

    01:14-01:24

And so the lessons that we see from this church are very, in Ephesus are very applicable to the church that we have here.

    01:25-01:28

So if I can have the first slide, I hope they worked.

    01:29-01:58

Okay, so the Bible passages that we're going to be looking at are in three areas, and the first two are ones that we are going to be studying today. If you do not have a Bible, I want you to raise your hand and we'll bring Bibles that we have available in the back so that you can have one. If you already have one of the Bibles, we'll be looking at page 603 and 633.

    01:59-02:03

That is where the book of Ephesians and the book of Acts is located.

    02:04-02:11

And so we'll start in Acts chapter 19 and begin there.

    02:12-02:19

So the introduction tells us about the story that's given in Acts chapter 19 and Acts chapter 20 in Ephesus.

    02:20-02:25

And we're going to be taking an overview. We're not going to go in depth on verse by verse.

    02:25-02:35

We're going to take an overview and then you can study during the week to see whether or not the things that we talked about are accurate and all the other treasures that are hidden here.

    02:36-02:37

So if I can have the next slide.

    02:39-03:11

So this is the city of Ephesus and what you see in this map is the Mediterranean Sea and on the far right is where the the Holy Land and Israel is located with Jerusalem being the bottom right city and the arrows that you see in the little like purple and yellow things are the missionary journeys of Paul and And what the book of Acts does is tells us the acts of the apostles, what they did.

    03:12-03:21

And from about the middle of the book of Acts to the end, it tells us each of the cities that Paul visited and what he did there.

    03:22-03:27

And you can actually go through the book of Acts and trace out exactly where he went.

    03:27-03:31

And this Bible chart shows exactly where he went.

    03:31-03:35

What I've circled in yellow is Ephesus.

    03:35-03:38

And Ephesus was an incredibly important city.

    03:39-03:44

It was actually one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire at this time.

    03:45-03:49

It had almost 500,000 people that were living in this area.

    03:50-03:52

It had a history for being there for thousands of years.

    03:53-04:03

And it actually housed one of the seven great wonders of the world, which was a temple to the goddess Artemis, also known as Diana.

    04:04-04:12

It was massive, pure marble pillars, and it was the largest building that had ever been built to that time.

    04:12-04:15

It was indeed one of the seven great wonders of the world.

    04:16-04:26

It got destroyed because Ephesus is right in the middle of the battles between Greece and Syria, and so a lot of traffic went through there.

    04:26-04:32

And a new temple was built after the old one was destroyed that was even greater.

    04:32-04:38

It had 125 pure marble pillars that were over 60 feet tall.

    04:38-04:48

It was a massive area and it was dedicated to this goddess of fertility and of...

    04:49-04:51

It turned out to be an area of prostitution.

    04:52-05:03

They actually had a marble street that went from the city to this other thing and had a brothel that was built two stories high, a huge area that facilitated this effort.

    05:04-05:11

There was also an incredible trade where people from all over the world came to this area because it was in the middle of a trade route.

    05:11-05:26

And throughout the whole Roman Empire, all over that part of Europe and the Middle East, They've dug up artifacts that have come from this area that are artifacts that looks like statues of Diana.

    05:27-05:30

And so whatever was built there spread throughout the area.

    05:31-05:32

So it was a center of pagan worship.

    05:33-05:44

It was one of the most important cities for Rome because it dominated this whole area that was called Asia by the Romans, but is actually the area shown on this map.

    05:44-05:49

So that's where this is located.

    05:49-05:55

Now the last thing I want to point out here on this map is that Paul came through here twice.

    05:56-06:01

The first time is the purple, and we're going to be talking about the purple where he came from Corinth and went to Ephesus.

    06:02-06:08

And the second time is in light green where he bypassed Ephesus and went to a city below called Miletus.

    06:09-06:13

And so those are the two cities that are going to be important, and we'll talk about that.

    06:13-06:15

So let's go to the next slide.

    06:16-06:20

Now the story picks up in Acts chapter 19.

    06:21-06:25

And so we're picking up sort of in the middle of Paul's journey.

    06:26-06:34

And he traveled from Greece over to Ephesus.

    06:34-07:04

And in verse 1 it says, "And it came about that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus and found some disciples. Now what kind of disciples were living at Ephesus? And it turns out that they were Jewish believers who had heard the message of John the Baptist, that the Messiah was coming, and they were dedicated, they wanted to see the Messiah.

    07:04-09:38

And Paul, in the next few verses, tells them his name is Jesus Christ. And he led Jews to the Lord. And as we look at the second point, is that beginning in verse 5, it says, "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came in them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. And there were about twelve men." So now we have a small nucleus of people who are believers who had been looking for the Messiah, they knew the Old Testament, and they were instructed in more depth exactly what God had done, what he had done through Jesus Christ and about salvation. Now the interesting thing is the Jews, when they heard the gospel and believed, started speaking in tongues. And what did that mean? If you go back and read Acts chapter 2 later on, we're not going to spend time here, what you see is that it was a sign to Jewish believers. The words that were spoken were not unintelligible to Jewish people. It was unintelligible to unbelievers and Gentiles. Because when the Jewish people at the Day of Pentecost, and that were all gathered in Jerusalem, when they heard the believer speaking, they understood exactly what was being said, and they recognized it was, it sounded like it was in their native language, and they understood exactly what was said. There were words praising God. It wasn't spreading the gospel, it was words of praise to God. They understood what it said, and they said, "What does it mean?" And Peter told them, "It means that a new time has coming as was prophesied in the Old Testament. And he told them about who Jesus was from the scriptures. And so the sign was to Jewish believers who were looking for the Messiah. But now that we have the scriptures and the word has gone out, there are no more tongues as was described here. So here was a sign to Jewish believers that confirmed something miraculous was happening and And it was the beginning of the church, and Paul begins the church here.

    09:40-09:47

Now, in verses 9 through 10, something very disturbing happened.

    09:48-09:50

And you know what? This happened over and over and over again.

    09:51-10:09

"But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil to the way before the multitude, He, meaning Paul, withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

    10:11-10:21

And this took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

    10:22-10:27

So that church started in a school, perhaps much like this.

    10:27-10:34

The difference was that Paul taught there daily for an additional two years.

    10:34-10:38

Can you imagine having the Apostle Paul as your teacher for two years?

    10:39-10:49

Now, at Harvest, we don't have this facility to teach daily for two years, but we have something equivalent.

    10:49-10:52

We have home groups with people who study the Word.

    10:52-10:57

And we saw that there's a home group on Wednesday that the pastor's teaching.

    10:57-11:03

And I teach one in the Oakland area and Shadyside on Tuesdays.

    11:03-11:04

And there are other ones as well.

    11:04-11:16

So you have the opportunity to get into the Word and to be taught almost daily and understand exactly what the Bible is about and what it means to you.

    11:18-11:28

Now, as we go on and look at verses 17 through 20, we'll see what happened.

    11:29-11:46

And so there's a description that we'll skip over about some conflict that happened, but it really drew attention to the power of the word and to the authority that God had given through Paul.

    11:46-12:01

And in verse 17, this miraculous event where a holy, where an evil spirit was in a man and Paul came up 'cause other people couldn't throw this demon out.

    12:01-12:15

And Paul, when he came up, the demon said, we know Paul and he was thrown out of, and this man had the demon thrown out of him.

    12:16-13:19

In verse 17 it says, "And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus. And the fear of the Lord fell on them, and the name of the Lord was magnified. Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. And many of those who practiced magic brought about their books together and began burning them in the sight of all, and it to be 50,000 pieces of silver. So we see is that the effect of the word was so powerful that people's lives were changed and they were committed to the gospel and to the teaching of Paul. And as we saw that the word spread throughout all that area of Asia, everyone heard of the Word of the Lord and what had happened at that point. The importance is that the name of Jesus was magnified.

    13:20-16:42

This brought, did not bring attention to Paul and his followers, it brought attention to Jesus and it was a powerful witness. Now just of interest to me, 50,000 pieces of silver, it turns out a year's wage was about 250 pieces of silver, so that is equal to 200 years of annual salary, or more than five million dollars. So that's a lot of stuff that a lot of people brought and burned publicly, and there was a complete change in that city. The impact was unbelievable of a small church beginning with 12 people within a couple years. That is a great church. It's a church where the word is going out and having an impact on people's life and it rocked the entire city. But as you remember from the map, Paul didn't stop there. He had other churches and other things and he moved on to other places. Now Paul did not abandon the people in Ephesus and just move on, he sent them a letter to help them understand how to live the Christian life. And it's one of the most important letters in the New Testament to understand these principles. So let's move forward to the book of Ephesus that is on page 633. Now this book is pretty amazing and what I'd like you to do is to look at Ephesians chapter 1 and the end of Ephesians chapter 6 and just hold up the pages because I want you to see that even though this is an amazing part of the scriptures and has so much in it, it's only a few pages long. It's amazing to see what's in there and we're going to do a brief overview but it's just actually a pretty short little letter but thousands of books have been written about this and it's been studied by millions of people for 2,000 years and still we haven't gotten to the bottom of it and completely understood the implications of this book. And here, the new church at Ephesus received this letter. Now I'm going to quickly go through the entire book and give you an idea of the types of things that are in it. And this is outlined in your handout. So under point two, Paul sent a letter recognized as God's Word, and it's called Ephesians. In chapter one, we're going to begin by just looking at one verse, and that's verse three. It said, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Now it goes on and it talks about how God the Father was involved in your salvation. It talks about how Jesus Christ paid the price for your salvation. It talks about the Holy Spirit sealing you in God's family.

    16:43-21:02

But it goes through in sequential detail and it turns out God has blessed us in over 30 ways. And if you study this, there are 30 things that happened at time of salvation that God's done for you. There's so much that we learn from studying chapter 1. But I'd like to move to chapter 2. Chapter 2, it also says something that was very important both for the Jews and the Gentiles who lived in the city of Ephesus. Now, beginning in verse 11, it talks about how the Jews who have had all the spiritual blessings and all the teaching, everything that God has poured out through the Jews to spread around the world, was now being brought together with the Gentiles. The Gentiles who had nothing, now we're going receive everything. And this is as they were united into a new body called the church. Now the church began on the day of Pentecost and we mentioned that when I spoke of Acts chapter 2. Did you know that Pentecost is actually one of the major Jewish ceremonies and gatherings and as I mentioned when I spoke of tongues. People came from all over the world to be in the city of Jerusalem during the Day of Pentecost. And they had just a very important series of things that occurred. But the highlight was when the priest got up in front of the congregation and he had two loaves of bread. And the loaves of bread were lifted and brought together as a unified sacrifice to God. Did you know the Jews didn't know what the two loaves stood for? For thousands of years in their history as they worshipped on the day of Pentecost, they were bringing these two loaves together and what we find out in the church it is the Jews and the Gentiles together that become a unified people of one body that provide a sacrifice of praise and service to our God and Father. So every time we think of Pentecost, the beginning of the church, it begins by having the Jews and Gentiles united. It points this out as we see in verse 16 of chapter 2. It talks about how there had been a disagreement and competition between the Jews and the Gentiles, but the purpose was that, he says, he might reconcile them both, both the Jews and Gentiles, into one body to God through the cross, having put to death the enmity. This is exactly what happened. They were brought together. And as we go on to verse 19, it says that you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the Saints and are of God's household." The people in Ephesus recognized that now they were brought into God's family, they were part of the history, they were spiritual children of Abraham. All the blessings that God promised they could benefit from through being united through Christ into one body. This is very important for them to know. Chapter 3 goes on and describes how this was such an important event and that Paul was given the privilege of explaining this. But what happens is that it's not just the external, it's the internal as well. So look at chapter 3 and verse 16. It says that he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his spirit in the inner man. It's not just external blessings, it is the Holy Spirit working inside of each person in the inner man.

    21:03-22:48

The people of Ephesus needed to know that, they needed to be reminded that this was happening with them. Chapter 4 goes on and talks about what does it mean to part of the body. This is one of the most important chapters in the Bible that talk about what a body is. Look down on verses, in chapter 4, beginning in verse 11. It says that he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some pastors and teachers. So these are special gifts he gave to build up the church. Now what we learn is the Apostles were the and in chapter 2 and 3 it talks about how the Apostles are the foundation of the church. But once the foundation is built, you don't need to build the foundation anymore, and the role of the Apostles has ceased. There were some prophets. Those were people that were given special insight into the church so that they could explain what happened until the scriptures were written. It says there are some evangelists, and those who go out and preach the gospel so that others are saved. And I do not have the gift of evangelism, but some of you probably do. And he gave some as pastors, and we have people here who are pastors. Those are those who are very good at leading one-on-one and helping to nurture and protect and strengthen people, and I don't have the gifts of a pastor. And some teachers, and you know what? I recognize that my gift is I don't have the gift of an apostle. I can't perform any miracles at all.

    22:51-22:55

I don't have the gift of evangelism. I don't have the gift of a pastor.

    22:55-22:59

But I do have the gift of teaching, and that it's actually what my job is.

    22:59-23:11

I've spent my entire career teaching at a university to graduate students and medical students, but I enjoy studying and I enjoy putting things together and teaching, And that's really what my gift is.

    23:11-23:13

But what is the purpose within the church?

    23:13-23:26

Well, it says here in verse 12, "The purpose of all of these is for the equipping of the saints for work of service to the building up of the body of Christ." Did you know that?

    23:27-23:29

The church is not about the pastors and teachers.

    23:30-23:31

    It's not.

    23:33-23:34

That's not the purpose of the church.

    23:35-23:40

The purpose of those people are to help you in your ministry.

    23:41-23:49

Every one of you has a ministry, and the purpose of the teachers, and the evangelists, and the pastors are to help you.

    23:49-23:50

    That's what they're for.

    23:51-23:54

And as we look at this a little bit further, it explains this in more detail.

    23:56-24:54

It says in verse 15 that speaking the truth in love, "We are to grow up in all aspects unto Him who is even the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies according to the proper working of each individual part." Now who's the individual parts? You are. Every person is a part and each person has to function in the church and they have to be connected to each other or you can't function. Now I studied medicine and physiology and what we study is how all the pieces work together. That's otherwise the body doesn't work. They don't work independently but it says here that Christ is the head of the church, and so all the information comes from Christ to the body.

    24:56-25:04

And so each part has to work together to cause the growth of the body for building up itself in love.

    25:04-25:05

    Now, what is love?

    25:06-25:11

Love is unconditional care and giving for other people.

    25:11-25:19

It is self-sacrifice for the benefit of others, and that is the critical part of the church.

    25:20-25:23

Well, that wasn't enough because the people at Ephesus wanted to know, "How do we live?

    25:24-25:30

How do we put this into action?" And in chapter 5, he tells us, look at chapter 5, verses 1 and 2.

    25:33-25:45

"Therefore, be imitators of God as dear children, and walk in love just as Christ loved you and gave himself up for you as an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

    25:47-25:48

So you know what your example is?

    25:49-25:55

Christ, you have to live like Christ did in love and sacrifice and service to others.

    25:58-25:59

Well, how do you do that?

    26:00-26:02

We don't know how to do that.

    26:04-26:10

And that's why I put another reference down, 1 Corinthians chapter four, verses 16 and 17, you can look up a little bit later.

    26:11-26:15

Paul said to the Corinthians, "You have to live in a way that Christ did.

    26:16-26:27

But in case you don't know how to do that, I'm sending you Timothy who knows how I live because I'm following Christ." So Christ is example, I show you how to follow Christ.

    26:28-26:30

Timothy learned from me and you learn from Timothy.

    26:32-27:03

Did you know that we're gonna maybe at a future time look at 1st Timothy chapter 3 and it talks about leadership in the church. And you know what it takes to be a leader? It's nothing about education. It's people within the congregation that everyone recognizes knows how to follow Christ. And if somebody, they're called elders and deacons, and if somebody doesn't know what to do but they want to follow Christ, here's an example of someone who who has walked before you that knows how to do it.

    27:05-27:19

Furthermore, from the middle of chapter 4 to halfway through chapter 6, it gives you examples of every area and stage in life, and what to do, how to behave, how to think, how to interact with others, what your attitude should be, and how to bring glory to God.

    27:19-27:23

The people in Ephesus needed to know, and Paul gave them these details.

    27:24-27:26

    Last, in chapter 6.

    27:28-27:29

    This is the scary part.

    27:31-27:41

In chapter 6 and verse 13, it says, "Therefore take up the full armor of God." Now, why do you need armor?

    27:43-27:44

It's because there's going to be conflict.

    27:46-27:51

"That you may be able to resist in the evil day." And did you know there's going to be evil days?

    27:56-28:01

And they were coming to this church, and having done everything to stand.

    28:03-28:10

So in the battle, it's not he who puts on his armor, it's the person that stands at the end and takes it off.

    28:10-28:11

That's the one who the victor is.

    28:14-28:21

If you look up at the beginning of this, verse 10, it says, Finally, be strong in the Lord.

    28:22-28:23

What does it mean to be strong?

    28:26-28:29

You may not feel physically strong, but what does it mean to be strong?

    28:29-28:33

And it doesn't tell you exactly how it says be strong.

    28:34-28:40

So if there is a difficult time or conflict, you are to be strong, but it's not in your own strength.

    28:41-28:42

It's in the strength of his might.

    28:44-28:48

And Paul goes on and describes what is the full armor of God.

    28:48-28:50

How do you be prepared when the evil day is coming?

    28:51-28:51

And can I tell you something?

    28:52-28:56

We're gonna see that Paul saw the evil days were coming in the church of Ephesus.

    28:57-28:57

    And you know what?

    28:58-29:00

Evil days are coming to this church.

    29:03-29:05

There's gonna be major conflict in this church.

    29:06-29:07

    And you know why?

    29:09-29:11

Because wherever God's working, Satan's working.

    29:14-29:14

    Did you know that?

    29:16-29:18

That is the history of the world.

    29:24-29:32

Well, in addition to teaching for almost three years and for sending the book of Ephesus, Paul also sent Timothy to help.

    29:32-29:38

And we're going to look at Timothy next week because I never would have sent Timothy and it was a disaster.

    29:40-29:46

Let's move back to the book of Ephesus, excuse me, the book of Acts.

    29:47-29:53

And I want to pick up the story because what we see is Satan attacks.

    29:56-29:57

    Satan attacks.

    29:58-30:00

You know what? We are not unaware of his schemes.

    30:00-30:05

There's two ways that he attacks, and the first one is from the outside.

    30:06-30:14

And so let's just pick up back in Acts chapter 19, page 603 again.

    30:18-30:23

And in verse 23 to 27, we learn about a guy named Demetrius.

    30:24-30:33

It says in verse 23, "About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way." Now, the Way in my Bible is capitalized, because it's the Way of salvation.

    30:34-30:38

It is the way of God, the whole counsel of God in the church.

    30:39-30:40

And there was no small disturbance.

    30:42-30:53

It says, "For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen.

    30:55-31:20

And he gathered them together with the workmen of similar trades and said to you, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends on this business." And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all.

    31:22-31:52

And there's not only danger of this trade of ours falling into disrepute, But also the temple of the great God Artemis has been regarded as worthless, and shame whom all of Asia and all the world worship should even be dethroned from her magnificence." So the first thing he points out is, "Hey, we're losing money off of this." As I told you, throughout all of the Roman Empire, these shrines have been found everywhere.

    31:53-32:27

That was a big business, very big business, and suddenly everybody turns away and they're burning their books. You know, five million dollars worth of books being burned in the entire area of Asia, hearing about the word and a considerable number of people turning away and changing their lives and living a life that's honoring to God. That's bad business, if you're in the wrong business. And so what he does, he stirs them up and he's not saying, Well, people say, "Well, business isn't so good. We don't feel so bad." But you know what? It also affected their lifestyle.

    32:29-32:33

They liked the prostitutes. They didn't have a two-story building.

    32:34-32:40

They liked the lifestyle. They liked the sin that was part of that pagan culture.

    32:40-32:45

Many people whose hearts were hardened did not like what was happening.

    32:45-32:48

They did not like the light shown on them. They did not like to be seen as evil.

    32:48-32:51

And it got to the point where they couldn't stand it anymore.

    32:56-33:30

As we continue to read here in verses 28 and 29, "When they heard this, they were filled with rage, and they began crying out, saying, 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!' And the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one account into the theater, and they dragged along Artemis and Aristocarius, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia, and they started a riot running through the church, through the city, and gathering up people, and they were about ready to destroy everybody associated with the church in a massive riot.

    33:33-33:34

But you know what? God protected them.

    33:36-34:12

And it's fascinating to see what happened. In verse 34, it says, "But they pulled out a man when they recognized that he was a Jew." "A single outcry arose from all of them, as they lasted for about two hours, 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!'" In verse 35, "And when, after quieting the multitude, the town clerk said to them, 'Men of Ephesus, what man here is there that does not know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis, and the image which fell down from heaven?

    34:12-34:33

since then, these are undisputable facts, you have to keep calm and do nothing about it." And goes on to say, "If there's a problem and there's been a loss of money through cheating, then you can take it to the courts." Now this is amazing because what God did is use the government to protect the church.

    34:34-34:38

There's a very important passage in Romans chapter 13.

    34:38-34:45

You know what? Every government is given its authority from God.

    34:45-34:51

And the purpose of the government is to suppress evil and to encourage good.

    34:51-34:56

And the agents of the government are appointed by God for that purpose.

    34:56-34:58

Now, sometimes they're better and sometimes they're not.

    34:59-35:05

But we are to support the government and pray for the government because the government protects God's work.

    35:07-35:15

Doesn't always happen, but that is a principle that we see, and certainly our freedom to worship is protected by the government.

    35:16-35:21

And we need to pray for our leaders that this important principle is not lost.

    35:21-35:24

And certainly here's an example here of where that happened.

    35:29-35:36

Now, this plan of Satan in this outward attack started good and ended poorly.

    35:38-35:42

But you know what? He didn't give up. And he never gives up.

    35:42-35:53

And we know that even now in parts of the world like Somalia and Northeast Africa and other places, he is using people to attack Christians and kill them. And we know that's happening.

    35:55-36:00

There's a magazine, we get "Voices of the Martyrs" that just outlines all the horrible things that are happening to Christians.

    36:01-36:04

But you know what? It strengthens the church.

    36:06-36:37

But I'm gonna tell you something that's even more worse more insidious and has a tremendous impact and it continues even today Now let's look in Acts chapter 20 Now I'm gonna just pick up in verse 17 and 18 Because Paul had left and he kind of circled back and it says from Miletus He sent to Ephesus So you remember I showed you the picture on the map where Ephesus was in the middle of the circle and Miletus was right below it?

    36:37-36:47

So Miletus was at Port City and Paul came in there and called the elders of the church to all come down from Ephesus so they could have a little retreat.

    36:49-37:06

And they came down and met Paul and he reminded them, he said, "You know yourselves from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I spent, I was with you the whole time." And he goes on and explains his ministry.

    37:08-37:19

Now he talked about all the happy things that happened, but now I'm going to show you a prophetic word from Paul about what was going to happen that is terrifying.

    37:20-37:30

And his answer is unexpected and really strange.

    37:36-38:43

In verse 27, again Paul says, "I did not shrink from declaring you the whole purpose of God." Now let's look at verses 28 through 30. He says, "Be on your guard for yourselves and for the whole flock from which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the church." Now this is kind of an interesting thing because he called the elders who were overseers and pastors or shepherds which is the word pastor. So these individuals were all elders but they had different roles as overseers, teachers, and pastors within the church. But this is the leadership of the church. He says again in verse 28, "The Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the church of God which he has purchased with his own blood." It is Jesus' church, he is the head. Verse 29, "I know that after my departure Savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock." Okay?

    38:45-39:32

Here's the worst part, verse 30, "And from among your own selves, men will arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples from their selves." False teachers are going to come into the church and they were already there, and they were among the elders that Paul had brought down to speak. It's like Jesus when he was in the upper room and said to the disciples, "One of you will betray me." They didn't all turn to Judas and say, "Well, he's obviously the only one dressed in black, it's him. They said, "No, is it I?" Nobody knew who it was.

    39:34-39:59

Judas was so trusted that he was the treasurer for the whole group. He was the most trusted person of the twelve disciples, yet Jesus himself said, "You know, one of you is a devil." And nobody could tell who it was. But eventually it came out in a time of crisis. And so nobody knew who it was, but they knew that there was infiltration among them.

    40:03-40:06

So Paul gives them an answer in verse 31.

    40:06-40:14

It says, "Therefore, be on the alert. Remember that night and day for a period of three years, I did not cease to admonish each one of you with tears." And here's the answer.

    40:14-40:20

"Now I commend you to God in the word of His grace." That was his advice.

    40:22-40:23

Who were they? I want to know who they were.

    40:25-40:29

I want to know how to find out who they are and how to oppose them.

    40:29-40:32

I want to know how to get rid of them. I want to take action.

    40:33-40:34

But you know what he said?

    40:37-40:39

God and His Word is sufficient.

    40:40-40:49

If you know God and His Word, you will be protected and the church will be protected from savage wolves against innocent sheep.

    40:51-40:52

    How does that happen?

    40:57-40:59

Well, I'm going to talk about that next week.

    41:02-41:19

But what I'd like to point out now is that Paul is not the only person that knew that Satan's plan was to deceive, to confuse, to infiltrate, to bring heretical doctrines in to destroy the church.

    41:21-41:27

Did you know that Peter, in his second epistle, that was one of the main things that he warned about?

    41:28-41:46

If you turn to 2 Peter chapter 2, which is on page 259, Peter at the end of chapter 1 talks about how the holy scriptures are given by the inspiration of God.

    41:47-42:17

holy men were driven to write exactly God's Word, and so that the Word of God is pure, it is accurate, it is complete, and it is ours. But in chapter 2 verse 1 he says, "But false prophets also arose among the people," speaking of the Old Testament, they had true prophets and false prophets. As a matter of fact, at the time of Jeremiah, all the prophets were false.

    42:17-42:29

All of them were saying that God is gonna prosper our country and God is gonna raise up Israel and God's gonna get rid of the Babylonians that were on the march and he's gonna save us, all of them.

    42:29-42:30

And you know what God told Jeremiah?

    42:33-42:35

He says, "The city's about to be destroyed.

    42:35-42:37

"In fact, the sword is already at the throat.

    42:38-42:44

"It's gonna be complete destruction "and there will be no salvation." And you know what Jeremiah's response was?

    42:45-42:52

Why are you lying to the people by telling them that there's safety when in fact, the sword is at the throat?

    42:54-42:55

And you know what God's response was?

    42:57-42:58

    Those prophets aren't mine.

    42:59-43:00

    They're not my prophets.

    43:00-43:01

    They say they are.

    43:01-43:03

They're dressed with the right robes.

    43:04-43:10

They're in the right places as part of the prophets of Israel, but they're not his prophets.

    43:10-43:11

    And they're speaking lies.

    43:15-43:23

So false prophets arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you.

    43:23-43:55

There will be false teachers among you, secretly introducing destructive heresies, planting doubt, questioning doctrines, questioning God's Word, saying, "Well, maybe that doesn't really apply." Even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

    43:55-44:07

And many, many, many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be maligned." And you know what I have to say to that?

    44:07-44:08

    "Boy, isn't that church history?

    44:10-44:11

Has that ever come to be true?

    44:11-44:14

Haven't we seen entire denominations destroyed?

    44:17-44:23

Entire Christianity brought into disrepute because of false teaching which led people to do the wrong thing.

    44:24-44:26

How do you defend yourself against this?

    44:26-44:28

How do you know if somebody's teaching false or truth?

    44:29-44:29

    What do you do?

    44:29-44:31

    What should the church do?

    44:31-44:37

Where we can't even tell by looking around who's a false teacher and who's a true teacher.

    44:38-44:42

As a matter of fact, Satan himself doesn't go around with a red suit and horns.

    44:42-44:50

He masquerades as an angel of light and his ministers also masquerade as ministers of light.

    44:51-45:02

Lastly, in Jude, who is one of Jesus' brothers, in the last book of the Bible before Revelation, so on page 622, gives a stern warning.

    45:05-45:19

In verse three, he says, "Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you "about our common salvation, "I felt it necessary to write to you, "appealing you to contend earnestly for the faith." Who is he writing to?

    45:20-45:31

Well, it says in verse 1, "Jude, a bondservant of Jesus and a brother of James, to those who are called." If you're a Christian, you are called. If you're a Christian, you are called.

    45:32-45:35

If you're a Christian, you are called. And that goes to you.

    45:36-45:42

You are to contend earnestly for the faith in whatever capacity God has given you.

    45:43-45:46

And why should you contend earnestly for the faith?

    45:46-46:12

which was once for all delivered to the saints in verse 4, "For certain people have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out of this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of God into lasciviousness and deny our Lord, our Master and Lord Jesus Christ." So what have we learned today?

    46:12-46:32

What have we learned today? What we see is a church in a town of Ephesus, an influential city, that was a center of pagan worship, where Paul began teaching in a small school daily. But as people came to know the Lord, something happened.

    46:36-47:23

What was it? Paul was in Ephesus, but it turned out that the people took the word throughout all of that area called Asia. It wasn't Paul going out, it was the people that heard the word, evangelized, and told everyone about this way through Jesus Christ. That's really highlighted again in back in our main passage in Acts about how this happened. The second thing we learned, let's go to the next one.

    47:28-47:40

In Acts 19, 20, it talks about how the Word was prevailing, and if all this good was happening, why was there a conflict? Why was there a problem?

    47:44-47:53

It's because not everyone wants the gospel. They love money, they love their lifestyle, they love other things, and there will be opposition to God's Word.

    47:54-48:04

And we see that Satan is leading the attack both from the outside in, but in a more sinister way from the inside out.

    48:05-48:24

So this church that within three years had had a impact over the whole known world, where miraculous things had happened, was protected by the government, was going to be attacked from the inside, from their own leaders.

    48:25-48:31

And we'll see next week that the entire church was almost completely destroyed.

    48:32-48:42

That Paul knew it was coming. He just said, "Well, you know, God be with you. Here's your Bible." And left.

    48:44-48:51

And then when things got desperate, he sent them the worst possible choice that I could have imagined.

    48:52-48:55

He said, "Here, you try to handle this mess." And it was a disaster.

    48:56-48:58

But you know what? That's not the end of the story.

    49:00-49:06

And if you come back next week, we'll finish talking about this and understand how God's ways work.

    49:06-49:14

how he builds the church, but how he preserves it, and how people can be protected from destruction.

  • 00:00-00:07

We are only a week too, but I thought it'd be good if I confess something to you.

    00:08-00:12

I've opened myself up a little bit. We do believe in a culture of transparency.

    00:16-00:24

I love commercials, but not like all commercials. Let me clarify this because I only love certain types of commercials.

    00:24-00:27

like insurance commercials, I really don't care for any of that.

    00:27-00:32

But the commercials that I like are for those things that I didn't know that I needed.

    00:32-00:34

    You know those commercials?

    00:34-00:36

Things that I didn't know that I needed.

    00:36-00:40

And here's what I like about those commercials, and some of you are totally going to get this.

    00:40-00:46

Like, "Oh, I know exactly what he's talking about. The black and white scenes in those commercials." You know what I'm talking about?

    00:47-00:52

Where you hear the guy going, "Oh, no!" And here's, like, for example, one of my favorites.

    00:54-00:56

You all know what this is, right?

    00:58-00:59

    The Snuggie!

    00:59-01:00

Oh, come on, some of you are like, what is it?

    01:00-01:02

    I've never, the Snuggie!

    01:03-01:04

Come on, you've seen the Snuggie, right?

    01:05-01:11

What I love about that is you have a commercial where the person is trying to have a blanket on and read the newspaper.

    01:11-01:12

    Oh, no!

    01:13-01:13

    Whoa!

    01:15-01:17

You know, call NASA, we have a problem.

    01:19-01:28

And, well, the Snuggie is basically, well, it's called the blanket that has sleeves, but it's basically a backwards robe.

    01:30-01:43

But I like this one because it comes with the book light that they have on the commercial that you see the person actually sitting and reading with their Snuggie on, with their book light in a completely lit room.

    01:44-01:46

And that always just cracked me up.

    01:47-01:52

This was something, when I saw that, I didn't even know that I needed this.

    01:53-01:55

And now, I don't think I can live without one.

    01:56-01:58

But I'm gonna live without this one here.

    01:59-02:00

    Here, you can have that.

    02:00-02:02

Now, if you were gifted, don't tell me.

    02:03-02:08

So, we have the Snuggie, well, it didn't stop there.

    02:11-02:15

Because we also have the Snuggie for dogs.

    02:16-02:20

Not only did I not know that I needed one, I didn't know that my dog needed one.

    02:21-02:23

This is a Snuggie for dogs.

    02:25-02:27

Did you know they made these things?

    02:28-02:29

    Okay, some of you did.

    02:30-02:30

    All right.

    02:31-02:33

Anybody here have a medium-sized dog?

    02:33-02:34

    All right, here.

    02:35-02:37

This would never fit my dog.

    02:39-02:39

    You're welcome.

    02:40-02:42

I know that was not gonna be regifted.

    02:43-02:45

    Okay, so another thing.

    02:45-02:46

    I just have one more.

    02:46-02:54

These things, I, um, what's the mall on 28th, the big deal where they put it?

    02:55-02:57

They have the As Seen on TV store.

    02:57-02:58

    Pittsburgh Mills.

    02:58-03:00

Pittsburgh Mills, thank you, thank you.

    03:01-03:03

They have a whole store dedicated to As Seen on TV.

    03:04-03:14

And when my wife and I first went there, I just walked in and I was just like, oh, it's hard to believe heaven's gonna be better than this.

    03:14-03:15

    I know it is.

    03:16-03:17

    Wow, they had everything there.

    03:18-03:19

    Well, here's another thing.

    03:20-03:21

    How about the pocket chair?

    03:22-03:23

Did you see the pocket chair?

    03:24-03:29

This is the amazing chair that fits in your pocket.

    03:32-03:33

    Hence the name, I suppose.

    03:35-03:38

But it's the pocket chair, it's ultra strong.

    03:39-03:42

    Holds up to 250 pounds.

    03:45-03:47

So I didn't take it out and try it.

    03:50-03:51

    That's why you're playing.

    03:51-03:52

    Who wants a pocket chair?

    03:53-03:55

All right, let me know how this works, okay?

    03:56-04:06

Now those things only have little commercials, but you have the big infomercials that are like a half hour long because they need more time to explain those things.

    04:07-04:11

The Snuggie, you don't really need a half hour infomercial for the Snuggie, though I would watch it.

    04:13-04:21

But, I love the intromertials. This is more of a guilty pleasure. I don't watch them anymore. I don't even know what the new ones are.

    04:21-04:26

But going back quite a few years, there were things like the Magic Bullet. Have you ever seen the Magic Bullet?

    04:28-04:34

And, oh, they can just do anything with the Magic Bullet. And Laura told me it's no good, right? Magic Bullet thumbs down.

    04:35-04:39

You can't make hummus with the Magic Bullet. So, alright, it's junk.

    04:39-05:07

And I like the ones you see the one with the knives or you have the little Italian chef and he was just cutting everything he's cutting the tomatoes and I was cutting cans and quarters and and I Love those things. I just love those commercials Okay, you have joy pleasures too, but that was always one of mine But some of the claims that they make on some of these were pretty outrageous outrageous.

    05:10-05:16

That's why you see on several news programs, they would have a segment called, you know, know what it is?

    05:17-05:20

"Does it really work?" You ever see those news segments?

    05:21-05:44

And those to me were even more interesting than the infomercials because you just have like Joe or Jane Average, like, "I bought one of these, I'm taking it out of the box, and I'm going to see if it actually works." "Does it really work?" Or, you know, this magic bullet thing claims it's going to do all this, and the Pocoyo Pocket Fisherman, and what about the Shake Weights?

    05:45-05:49

You know, that guy shaking the Shake Weight looks like Hercules.

    05:49-05:58

I'm like, "Wow, you might actually grab this thing and I'll look like that guy?" Well, like, Jim Hansen, a lot of oil and stuff, I guess.

    05:59-06:02

    But does it really work?

    06:02-06:10

And I was actually looking some of these things up online, and sadly what they found out in a lot of these things is what Laura had told me.

    06:11-06:16

Huge claims are made about these products. A lot of them do not work.

    06:17-06:26

And that's why I was not surprised when I went to the Dollar Tree yesterday and saw a lot of these things actually on the shelf at the Dollar Tree.

    06:26-06:28

and they cost a dollar as seen on TV.

    06:29-06:35

And I'm thinking, I'm totally going to get ripped off if I buy something for a dollar here.

    06:38-06:45

So all I have to say is, look on your outline if you have it in the back of your bulletin.

    06:47-06:54

These things make tremendous claims that many of them don't follow through.

    06:55-06:57

I want you to listen to a claim that God makes.

    06:57-06:59

    Okay? Listen to this claim.

    07:01-07:03

    Isaiah 55, verses 10 and 11.

    07:04-07:26

"For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth.

    07:27-07:39

It shall not return to me empty, listen to this, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

    07:40-07:42

Do you see what this claim is that God is making?

    07:43-07:50

God is saying that when my word goes forth, It always accomplishes the purpose for which I'm sending it.

    07:51-07:52

    That's a claim.

    07:54-07:57

The Bible works for some people, but not for others.

    07:57-07:59

    That's not what God said.

    08:02-08:07

Well, you know, I went to church today and I heard the Bible, but I'm not sure it did me any good.

    08:07-08:08

    That's not what God said.

    08:10-08:12

He says when His Word goes out...

    08:14-08:15

    What's he batting at?

    08:15-08:17

    What's his batting at?

    08:17-08:18

    Before the playoffs, right?

    08:19-08:20

    He's batting a thousand.

    08:20-08:27

God says, "My word always accomplishes the purpose for which I send it out." Every time it's not in question.

    08:28-08:29

    God's word goes out?

    08:30-08:32

Like, "God, you work it?" The answer is yes.

    08:33-08:34

    Stupid me sometimes, I pray.

    08:35-08:42

"God, I just pray that your word would be worked powerfully." And I don't think it's like an evil prayer, but God's already told me that it is.

    08:42-08:54

God's like, "My work, when it goes forth, is going to accomplish the thing that I purpose." So we're going to look today at our first pillar of our Bible chapter.

    08:55-09:02

Our first pillar, as our pastor Jamie said in the video, is proclaiming the authority of God's work without apology.

    09:04-09:09

Why is that? Number one, well, God's word accomplishes God's purposes. I want to hear you say that.

    09:09-09:11

    God's Word accomplishes God's purposes.

    09:12-09:12

    Let me hear you.

    09:13-09:15

    God's Word accomplishes God's purposes.

    09:16-09:17

Okay, we're going to take another run at that.

    09:18-09:19

And I want you to say it like God would say it.

    09:20-09:22

    God's Word accomplishes God's purposes.

    09:27-09:28

Alright, some of you are too busy.

    09:29-09:29

    Well, let's go.

    09:31-09:37

We preach from the Bible because God says that's what He uses.

    09:38-10:00

That's why when you come here on a Sunday, or you go to any of these 77 Harvest Bible Chapels, somebody's going to stand up and say, "This is what the Bible says. Why do we do that?" Because God says, "This is what I'm using." You're like, "Don't all churches kind of do that? I mean, this isn't like a radical concept.

    10:00-10:16

Don't all churches, aren't they all like really fired up about the Bible like you and God seem to be?" Listen to this poll. I read this in Time Magazine a few years ago and I was completely floored.

    10:16-10:22

They took a poll of Protestant clergymen, this is sociologist Jeffrey Hayden.

    10:23-10:31

He surveyed about 10,000 clergymen and 7,441 replied.

    10:31-10:34

Okay, so it wasn't like we went up and down the street and asked a couple.

    10:34-10:37

    They talked to 7,441...

    10:38-10:40

    Understand this. Pastors.

    10:41-10:47

This isn't like Joe on the street, or I was sitting in the mall just bragging to people as they walked by.

    10:48-10:57

They asked pastors several questions concerning the Virgin, birth, the resurrection, etc.

    10:57-10:58

I want to focus on here.

    10:59-11:05

When they were asked if they believed that the scriptures were the inspired and inerrant word of God, that was the question.

    11:05-11:10

Do you believe this is God's book, that God wrote this?

    11:12-11:15

87% of Methodist pastors said no.

    11:17-11:20

87% of Methodist pastors said no.

    11:22-11:27

Episcopalians, of those who hold-- now, we're not throwing these denominations under the bus.

    11:27-11:31

a point, you can look this up yourself, I'm just telling you, here's where we're at.

    11:32-11:35

    Episcopalians, 95% said no.

    11:37-11:40

    82% of Presbyterians said no.

    11:41-11:44

67% of American Baptists said no.

    11:45-11:48

77% of American Lutherans said no.

    11:48-11:53

And 24% of the Missouri Synod Lutherans said no.

    11:54-12:09

These are pastors saying, "I don't believe this is God's will." We're going to hear a different story here, because we do believe that God wrote a book, and we're blessed to have it.

    12:09-12:18

I'd like to talk to some of these pastors, just sit down, and say, "Okay, so you don't believe the Bible is the Word of God, so what did you come up with? What did you do at your church?

    12:18-12:30

You found something better than the Bible, right? You found something better than the Bible." You know, here we have a book that was claimed to be written by the God of the universe, and always accomplishes His purpose.

    12:30-12:34

We're not going to find anything better than this.

    12:35-12:38

But it is a radical thing to consider that.

    12:38-12:40

I mean, think about it. The concept.

    12:41-12:50

We believe that God, who created the heavens and the earth in 6 24-hour days, also wrote a book.

    12:53-12:57

through about 40 people over a period of about 1,500 years.

    12:59-13:04

God spoke through these people and said, this is the book that I wrote.

    13:07-13:16

In fact, when you read this book, there are around 4,000 claims that the writers are making that this is the word of God.

    13:21-13:29

But you know the first question that we see in the Bible is still dangling out there today.

    13:30-13:32

You know what the first question is in the Bible?

    13:33-13:35

It's when the serpent, the Satan, appeared before Eve.

    13:37-13:40

He said, "Did God really say...

    13:43-13:48

Did God really say..." That's still the question the Satan's using.

    13:49-13:51

He's using that point because it's effective.

    13:52-13:53

And that's what's happening with pastors.

    13:54-13:55

    That's what's happening with Christians.

    13:56-14:01

All over the churches, people are saying, "Did God really say that?" And the Bible says this.

    14:01-14:05

"Did God really say that?" And it becomes a head issue.

    14:06-14:08

And I'm not really sure that one's inspired.

    14:08-14:10

I think maybe parts of it are.

    14:10-14:12

I'm not really sure about that.

    14:12-14:13

    It becomes a head issue.

    14:13-14:17

But let's be honest, sometimes, Christians, doesn't it also become a heart issue?

    14:17-14:22

When there's something that you know the Word of God has hidden you on it, you're like, "No, just...

    14:23-14:31

Is that really what it says?" Well, turn in your Bibles with me to 2 Timothy chapter 3.

    14:34-14:36

    2 Timothy chapter 3.

    14:38-14:40

    God's Word accomplishes God's purposes.

    14:41-14:43

We're going to look at just a few verses here.

    14:50-14:54

2 Timothy chapter 3. First of all, look at verse 16.

    14:56-15:06

It says, "All scripture is breathed out by God." So circle that word "all" in your Bible.

    15:08-15:11

Sort of like last week we talked about Jesus saying he had authority.

    15:11-15:13

What kind of authority did Jesus say he had?

    15:14-15:16

All authority in heaven and on earth.

    15:16-15:18

Here we see another "all" claim.

    15:19-15:21

This is what the Bible claims about itself.

    15:23-15:26

It says that all scripture is breathed out by God.

    15:29-15:32

    Some translations say "inspired".

    15:32-15:34

    All scripture is inspired.

    15:35-15:37

If you're taking notes, I want you to drop these things down.

    15:37-15:40

This is what inspired does not mean.

    15:41-15:44

When we talk about inspired, it does not mean this.

    15:44-15:47

First of all, it doesn't mean it's a high level of human achievement.

    15:48-15:58

It doesn't mean it's a high level of human achievement as if, "Wow, those guys that wrote that, they were having some good days." You can tell they were just in the zone.

    15:58-16:01

They were, "Wow, great job guys.

    16:01-16:03

    Great job. Fantastic.

    16:04-16:07

You guys really did a great job." That's not what inspired means.

    16:09-16:16

Secondly, inspired does not mean the concepts were inspired.

    16:18-16:20

The words were inspired. That's what some people teach.

    16:20-16:25

Well, the Bible's concepts are true, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the words are true.

    16:26-16:27

    I don't agree with that.

    16:28-16:31

You can't have concepts without words.

    16:31-16:41

And we believe in a God who is so powerful, He can create things by speaking them into existence, but He's not powerful enough to give us a book that says exactly what He wants us to say.

    16:41-16:42

    Really?

    16:43-16:44

That's the best we came up with?

    16:45-16:46

    Well, it's just the concept.

    16:46-16:48

    Like, for example, Genesis.

    16:50-16:54

We don't really know how the earth and God appeared, and it probably wasn't six 24-hour days.

    16:55-17:01

So, He was just giving us the concept that made me go, "That's not what your Bible says.

    17:01-17:05

The Bible says God created them to the earth in 6 24 hour days.

    17:05-17:06

Literally, that's what the Bible says.

    17:08-17:09

    It's not a God sentence.

    17:10-17:14

God says, "Yeah, I did it. Here's exactly how I did it." It's not a God sentence.

    17:15-17:16

    So let's lose that.

    17:19-17:23

Third thing, inspired is not mean it's just hard work.

    17:24-17:25

    Oh, so inspirational.

    17:27-17:31

Especially that 1 Corinthians 13 stuff.

    17:32-17:33

    So it's a mission.

    17:34-17:36

    That's not what inspired me.

    17:36-17:38

And yes, there are times the Bible gives us that.

    17:40-17:40

    I love that verse.

    17:40-17:41

I put that on my wall.

    17:43-17:49

That verse, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." You know, on my marker wire poster.

    17:51-17:53

But that verse has nothing to do with baseball.

    17:53-17:55

    But that's another subject.

    17:55-17:57

    But that's just inspiring.

    17:57-18:03

Sometimes the Bible does warm our hearts, but that's not what Paul is talking about here.

    18:05-18:09

And fourthly, number four, inspiring is not being hypocritical.

    18:10-18:12

And I've talked to some pastors that believe that.

    18:12-18:15

Like, yeah, some of the Bible is true, but there's some other parts that aren't.

    18:16-18:21

There's like filler. Like God's like, "Okay, here's my part. Now would you round it out?

    18:21-18:24

Okay, can you just come up with some stuff and just kind of round it out?

    18:26-18:32

It's not hitting this because what does your Bible say all scripture is breathed out by God what percent is that?

    18:33-18:51

No, no, no percent is all 100% it's all Breathed out by God the God through these people using their personalities in their context he Have them write down his word.

    18:53-18:55

And he's preserved his word to this day.

    18:56-18:57

    It's awesome.

    18:59-19:13

That's why if you look down at 2 Timothy 4, 2, Paul tells Timothy, "Preach the word." He says, "Timothy, preach the word." He doesn't say, "I charge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus to entertain people." He doesn't say that.

    19:15-19:16

    But to get people churched.

    19:16-19:21

He says, "Preach the Word." Timothy, get God's Word out.

    19:21-19:23

I love what Ken Shaw said in that video.

    19:24-19:25

You know, God's Word is like a lion.

    19:25-19:26

We don't need to defend it.

    19:26-19:30

We just need to open the cage and let it out, and it will take care of itself.

    19:31-19:36

That's why he says, "Preach the Word." Why?

    19:37-19:40

Because God's Word accomplishes God's purposes.

    19:41-19:43

So how does God use the Bible?

    19:43-19:44

I want to share with you this morning.

    19:46-19:48

We preach the word, but why?

    19:48-19:50

Well, God's word encompasses God's purposes.

    19:50-19:52

Your next question is, well, what are God's purposes?

    19:53-19:54

    Well, here they are.

    19:54-19:56

He just laid them all out for us.

    19:57-19:59

    Jump up to verse 14.

    19:59-20:02

We'll read it and then we'll go back to it and kind of break it down a little bit.

    20:03-20:07

"Father, as for you," He's talking to Timothy, he's the son of the gospel.

    20:07-20:49

"As for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it, and how from childhood you have been equated with the sacred writings which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus, all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be confident and equipped for every good work." So why do we preach the Bible?

    20:49-20:52

Number one, how is the Bible used?

    20:52-20:53

Well, first of all, for salvation.

    20:56-20:59

    God's Word leads us where?

    20:59-21:00

    It leads us to Him.

    21:01-21:02

God's Word leads us to Him.

    21:05-21:12

This is quite a claim to say, you know, this book is what God uses to alter eternity.

    21:13-21:17

People's souls are saved through what is written in this book.

    21:17-21:18

    That's quite a claim.

    21:18-21:24

Well, he told Timothy, these scriptures make you wise for salvation.

    21:25-21:26

    John 5, 24.

    21:27-21:34

Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me, That's eternal life.

    21:36-21:59

John 5.39 Jesus said, "Use your scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life, and in this day that you are witness about me." Romans 10.17 "So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." Now this letter and paper isn't the thing that saves you.

    22:00-22:05

It's the Word of God pointing the way to Jesus Christ.

    22:06-22:07

He is the One who saves.

    22:08-22:14

But we can't know God, and we can't know the work of Jesus Christ, and we can't know the work of the Holy Spirit apart from what?

    22:15-22:16

    Apart from His blood.

    22:17-22:20

And I can personally testify that's how I came to the Lord.

    22:20-22:27

It wasn't a slick evangelist, it wasn't some crusade, it wasn't persuasive words of wisdom.

    22:27-22:37

And it was somebody sitting down saying, "Read this. What does it say? What does it mean? How should you respond?" God's Word cut me to the heart.

    22:38-22:40

And it was the Word of God that led me to salvation.

    22:42-22:47

Which should not surprise me, because God says His Word accomplishes His purposes, right?

    22:49-22:54

So, this is important that we start it, because everything else that we're going to talk about...

    22:54-22:57

He says this is for the man of God, verse 17.

    22:57-22:58

The man of God being the covenant.

    22:59-23:03

Everything else we're going to see builds off of this.

    23:04-23:05

Let me pause here for a second.

    23:07-23:14

The first thing that God's word has to do in your life is bring you to salvation.

    23:18-23:21

Churching unchurched people does not do anyone any good.

    23:23-23:26

See, our goal is to not try to make people in church.

    23:26-23:28

That's not our goal we talked about last week.

    23:28-23:29

    We want to make disciples.

    23:29-23:38

We want, as the Holy Spirit is at work, followers of Jesus Christ, born again, as from death to life, as from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.

    23:39-23:40

    That's what we're going after.

    23:41-23:45

We're not trying to moralize immoral people.

    23:48-23:52

The first thing the scriptures have to do is bring you to the place of salvation.

    23:54-23:55

    Are you there?

    23:58-23:59

    Are you there?

    23:59-24:05

Are you checking out this church because there's a cool guy on the radio and we're kind of tied in with him?

    24:05-24:07

So this sounds like a cool place to hang out.

    24:08-24:09

    Are you saved?

    24:10-24:11

    That's step number one.

    24:12-24:13

    We're not starting a club.

    24:15-24:17

We want to reach out with the gospel.

    24:17-24:19

And that's where it has to start.

    24:19-24:20

    It has to start there.

    24:20-24:21

    are you saved?

    24:24-24:25

What does it mean to believe?

    24:27-24:29

Jesus said about believing in him, what does it mean to believe?

    24:29-24:32

Quickly, there's three levels of belief.

    24:33-24:40

The first level of belief is, you could say, is understanding the facts.

    24:42-24:48

Like when somebody gets up and says something, they're promoting some truth, hopefully.

    24:49-24:52

The first level of belief is do I understand what he's saying?

    24:53-24:54

    Do I understand that?

    24:55-24:56

That's the first level of belief.

    24:56-25:00

The second one is, do I agree with him?

    25:03-25:06

So you see, we get up and we say this is what the Bible says.

    25:06-25:07

You say, well, okay, I see what he's saying.

    25:08-25:09

The second is, do I agree with him?

    25:11-25:12

That's the second level of belief.

    25:13-25:17

And the third level of belief is when you put your light on it.

    25:18-25:29

To say, "I'm acting upon this." For the illustration I like to use, you know, "Where's the pocket chair at? Let's get that thing out." If I... It says that it holds a 250 pound person, it's stating a fact.

    25:29-25:40

I'd be like, "Okay, I understand what that's saying." The second question is, "Do I agree with that?" Well, the third level of believing, you'd have to do what?

    25:41-25:43

You'd have to take that chair out and actually sit on it.

    25:43-25:44

    That's what faith is.

    25:44-25:50

Meaning, I'm trusting that this is true and I'm basing my life on it.

    25:50-25:51

    That's what faith is.

    25:51-25:53

And that's what we do with the Word of God.

    25:53-26:00

This is what God said, that my life is going to be centered around a faith that believes God in His Word.

    26:01-26:07

If God is not who He says He is, if His Word does not do what He says it's going to do, I'm going to fall flat on my face.

    26:10-26:11

    That's faith.

    26:11-26:14

So salvation, first of all, God's worth leads to Him right there.

    26:16-26:21

Secondly, teaching God's worth lays the foundation of truth.

    26:24-26:28

Going back to verse 16, again, all scriptures breathed out by God.

    26:29-26:33

"Improfitable for teaching." What's the Bible good for?

    26:33-26:35

For the same person, the first thing is teaching.

    26:36-26:38

    Literally, that's doctrine.

    26:39-26:42

These are things we wouldn't know about God if we weren't as upset.

    26:44-26:45

The Bible is truth as God sees it.

    26:48-26:50

Who He is. Who we are.

    26:52-26:54

    Sin. Eternity.

    26:54-26:56

What is Heaven? What is Hell?

    26:56-26:57

What's our purpose in this life?

    26:59-27:01

This is truth as God sees it.

    27:04-27:08

And again, that's why salvation has to be first, because you can't really teach doctrine to a non-believer.

    27:09-27:14

The Bible says these things must be spiritually discerned. You can't do it apart from the work of the Holy Spirit, can you?

    27:19-27:22

The Bible is good for teaching, laying a foundation of truth.

    27:22-27:26

Remember last week we said that Jesus' last command was my first priority.

    27:26-27:33

Jesus said, "To teach them to observe all that I have commanded you." How are we going to teach people to do that?

    27:34-27:36

He's given it to us where? In His Word.

    27:37-27:39

People can't do what they don't know.

    27:43-27:48

God's Spirit in you always works with His Word.

    27:50-27:57

So the question I have for you is, have you allowed God's Word to lay that foundation of truth in your life?

    27:58-28:07

You know, Christians, have you come to that place where you've received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, but have you allowed God's Word to be the foundation of truth?

    28:11-28:17

I was on a panel discussion with a lot of area clergy people last year.

    28:19-28:28

And it was a panel discussion up at a high school, and the kids actually asked questions that we ought to answer from our own point of view, presenting our religious viewpoints, whatever.

    28:28-28:37

And one of the questions was, do you believe that God created in 6 24 hour days?

    28:40-28:47

Do you believe that when the Bible says there were 6 24 hour days, that's actually literally 24 hour days.

    28:48-28:52

So I actually have this Bible with me.

    28:54-28:58

And I'm like, "Oh, I'm so glad you asked that," and I took some notes.

    29:11-29:12

    That's resurrection.

    29:15-29:19

Anyway, I have some notes in here, one of these blank pages that you always wonder what you're supposed to do with.

    29:19-29:20

    Here we go.

    29:21-29:22

I'm not quite Genesis, imagine that.

    29:23-29:29

They said, "Well, do you believe that there are actually 24-hour days?" And I said, "Well, here's something I found out.

    29:29-29:34

The word 'day' in Hebrew is 'yom,' and it's used with a number or a numerical qualifier.

    29:35-29:42

In the Old Testament, the yom with a numerical qualifier, 359 times it's used.

    29:43-29:45

It always refers to a literal 24-hour day.

    29:45-29:57

When a word "yom" is used with the phrase "evening" or "morning," which is 23 times in the Old Testament, that's always a 24-hour day.

    29:59-30:06

The phrase "evening" and "morning" is used in the Old Testament without the word "yom," day 38 times, all 61 times, it refers to a 24-hour day.

    30:07-30:12

Exodus 20, verse 11, talking about the Sabbath, God, my God, here's the creation week.

    30:13-30:35

Israel here's your week just like five weeks six point twelve days So I shared that and I was just kind of like close the Bible and the discussion And then like the next pastor down like you believe that they're like no I really believe Genesis is just sort of like it just tells us a little story about how we got here But I don't think it's literally true. I'm like, where were you like a minute ago?

    30:35-30:47

I just covered this and then the next pastor now "Well, I'm kind of like this guy where I don't really think that there are 24 hour days that might be taking up billions of years." Who are we to not take God at His word?

    30:49-30:57

But you see, my point is, if the word of God is to lay a foundation of truth, that's where it has to start. It has to start there.

    30:58-31:07

It starts with, I don't want to offend scientists, so I'm going to try to kind of get their beliefs to incorrect.

    31:10-31:12

    That's the foundation of truth.

    31:13-31:16

So God's Word brings us to salvation.

    31:18-31:19

It leads us to Him teaching.

    31:20-31:25

Thirdly, God's Word exposes our errors.

    31:26-31:28

    God's Word exposes our errors.

    31:28-31:30

You see, the next thing is the problem of teaching.

    31:31-31:33

And here it is, for reproof.

    31:34-31:36

For reproof, literally, in the Greek, that's rebuke.

    31:37-31:44

That's confronting someone when they're misbehaving, so to speak.

    31:45-31:49

When you want to show them what you're doing is wrong.

    31:51-31:52

Well, God's Word exposes our errors.

    31:53-31:58

You see, it builds a foundation of truth, but it also tears down error.

    31:59-32:01

First of all, it rebukes false teaching.

    32:03-32:16

I had somebody tell me one time, when we were talking about different religions and beliefs and things like that, this lady said, "You know, you can't ever tell anybody that they're wrong. You can't do that." I said, "Yeah, you can. It's easy.

    32:16-32:24

When somebody makes a claim, contrary to the Word of God, you say, "That's incorrect, because the Bible says this." See, that wasn't hard.

    32:25-32:34

"Oh no, no, you can't tell people that!" Well, God says that's what He's in the business of doing, because this Word is profitable for reproof.

    32:34-32:35

    God's Word exposes our errors.

    32:37-32:39

So not only false teaching, but also false conduct.

    32:41-32:46

"I'm angry and bitter." And God's Word points that out.

    32:48-32:52

I'm lusting or I have an idol in my life. Something has taken priority in my life.

    32:52-32:54

But God's Word points those things out.

    32:55-33:01

It says, "Jeff, you're out of line here. You're out of line. This is wrong." That attitude was wrong.

    33:02-33:04

The way you talked to that person was wrong.

    33:05-33:06

    That's the reproof.

    33:08-33:17

You see, people that do actually want to hold on to their sin, they don't want to stick around a church like this very long.

    33:19-33:28

If you're trying to have, "I want to hold on to my sin, but God's going to just keep telling me what God says in His Word," you're not going to stick around.

    33:30-33:31

    Because it cuts.

    33:32-33:35

What's the Hebrew writer say? It's sharper than any what? Two-edged sword.

    33:36-33:38

That's what he's talking about. It cuts you.

    33:39-33:40

    It cuts.

    33:43-33:47

Hebrews 12 actually tells us that God has included us as sons.

    33:48-33:51

And the redeemed are going to want to accept the loving Father's review.

    33:51-33:54

Okay, it's like Dad coming home and saying, "Son, you're wrong.

    33:55-33:59

You're wrong." So God's Word exposes our errors.

    34:02-34:03

    Let's have a closing song.

    34:03-34:04

    No, not yet.

    34:04-34:05

Hang on because there's good news.

    34:06-34:08

God just doesn't come along and say, "You're wrong.

    34:09-34:10

Have a nice day." But look at the next thing.

    34:12-34:12

    So important.

    34:12-34:13

    For correction.

    34:14-34:15

    For correction.

    34:15-34:17

    God's Word changes our course.

    34:18-34:21

You see, this is the positive to the previous.

    34:21-34:22

    It corrects our error.

    34:23-34:25

    It corrects our conduct.

    34:25-34:28

The Greek word is, this is actually the only place in the New Testament that it's used.

    34:29-34:31

But it literally means to straighten up.

    34:32-34:33

Did your mom ever tell you that?

    34:33-34:34

    Hey, straighten up.

    34:35-34:36

Anybody have a mom tell them that?

    34:37-34:41

"No, not me Pastor Jeff, I was a perfect kid." Liar! Straighten up!

    34:42-34:44

My mom always told me that. Straighten up. Hey, straighten up.

    34:44-34:47

You're going to grandma's house, straighten up.

    34:47-34:49

    That's what this word means.

    34:50-34:53

That God doesn't just come along and tear you down.

    34:54-35:04

God says, "This is wrong, but here, this is right." straighten up and the tearing down is meant to bring you to that place.

    35:04-35:05

And you see, that's good news.

    35:06-35:09

That's good news because you can get back on track.

    35:10-35:23

Being in pastoral ministry for 14 years, I've met a lot of people, especially in prison ministry, I've met a lot of people that just feel like I've messed things up too bad.

    35:24-35:44

I would share the word with them and they would be like, "Great, I'm way beyond all that. I can't get back on track. That's wrong." God says, "Today is the day of salvation." And if you need to repent and come to the Lord, the Lord goes good for that.

    35:45-35:58

If you have backslidden or you haven't been growing or maybe as a Christian you've been caught up in sin Gosh, maybe God has like a second class level of Christianity for me for the rest of my life.

    35:59-35:59

    That's wrong.

    36:03-36:04

You can get back on track.

    36:06-36:15

I believed wrongly. God says, "Okay, here's the right way of thinking. Change your mind. Let's move forward." I've done the wrong thing.

    36:15-36:20

Repent. Make restitution when you need to. And let's move on. It's correction.

    36:22-36:24

The off track, the poor, the straight, and the young.

    36:27-36:32

And finally, number five, it's just right there in the text.

    36:34-36:35

    Training and Righteousness.

    36:37-36:40

Training and Righteousness, God's Word prepares us for work.

    36:42-36:46

The word training is actually an interesting word in the Greek.

    36:47-36:51

It comes from the same root where we get the word child in the Greek.

    36:52-36:57

And literally this training in righteousness is the same concept as training a child.

    36:59-37:04

It's about nurturing and raising and growing and bringing to maturity.

    37:05-37:06

    That's what this word means.

    37:07-37:08

    Just like a child.

    37:09-37:15

And there's good news in that because parents, you don't raise a child every day, do you?

    37:17-37:21

    It's steady, it's consistency, it's overtime.

    37:22-37:23

And we'll talk about that in a second.

    37:23-37:24

    But it's nurturing.

    37:26-37:34

You might be sitting here this morning saying, "Well, why don't I feel like I've grown?" I've really, you know, since I've come through Christ, I've just gone through this period where I don't feel like I've grown.

    37:34-37:49

1 Peter 2 says, "Does newborn baby desire the sincere milk of the Word, that you may grow thereby?" A baby wanting milk is a sign of life.

    37:50-37:52

    It's a sign of life, isn't it?

    37:52-37:55

When that baby wants to eat, it's a sign of life.

    37:56-38:05

Well, as a baby Christian, wanting God's Word is a sign of life.

    38:07-38:16

You see, this is where it gets tough for me because I was thinking this week, "Okay, what can I say to make them want to read the Bible more?" The truth is, there really isn't anything.

    38:17-38:18

I can tell you what the Bible does.

    38:19-38:26

Awesome, eternal things. It will change you from the inside out, and you will not ever regret doing what God has called you to do.

    38:26-38:30

But there's nothing that I can tell you that's going to make you want to read the Bible.

    38:31-38:33

That has to come from God's Spirit working with you.

    38:34-38:36

You have to be like that baby.

    38:36-38:43

We have two kids 15 months apart. When they were babies, we didn't have to convince them it was time to eat.

    38:43-38:52

"Come on Owen, it's well tried. Go like it, it'll make you grow." He was like, "I'm hungry, give me food, I'm eating." That was it.

    38:54-38:57

And as a baby Christian, you have that appetite in you.

    38:59-39:01

Living things get hungry, are you hungry?

    39:03-39:07

Well, maybe you're saying, "Well, where do I get started?" Well, again, good news.

    39:08-39:26

See back in verse 15, Paul tells Timothy, "You've been acquainted with the secret ratings for how long?" He says, "From childhood." There's a little word of encouragement in there for me because sometimes I read God's Word and I don't have everything figured out.

    39:26-39:27

    That's okay.

    39:30-39:32

Timothy didn't have everything figured out either.

    39:32-39:38

But what brought him to the place of maturity where he was, was he'd been at it for a while.

    39:39-39:41

    He'd been growing at this.

    39:41-39:50

And no matter where you are right now in your walk, no matter where you are right now in knowledge of God's Word, you can grow from the place where you are right now.

    39:50-39:51

    Do you know that?

    39:52-39:53

You can grow from where you are.

    39:55-39:57

Like, well, I'm not John MacArthur. None of us are.

    39:58-40:01

But we can grow from where we are right now.

    40:03-40:06

Alright? So where do I get started? Well, don't be intimidated.

    40:11-40:12

    It takes time.

    40:13-40:17

Next month we're going to be starting a series in the book of Colossians.

    40:18-40:20

You know a great place to get started? Read Colossians.

    40:20-40:24

It will probably take you 10 or 15 minutes to sit down and read the whole thing through.

    40:25-40:32

I encourage you, just even if you do it a couple times a day over the next week, just sit down and read Colossians through a couple times.

    40:33-40:40

And then maybe as we get closer to the series, maybe instead of reading the whole thing through, Maybe you're just going to focus on a passage at a time.

    40:40-40:44

You're going to slow down and read it and understand it.

    40:50-40:54

How much do you think you'll grow and go on forward with that series if you start right now?

    40:55-40:56

And we want to help you.

    40:56-40:57

Maybe you say, well, I don't really have a Bible.

    40:58-40:59

    I can read.

    40:59-41:03

I don't understand this, but out on the tables, out on the lawn, there's Bibles.

    41:04-41:04

    They're yours taken.

    41:04-41:06

    There's Bible reading reference sheets.

    41:06-41:07

you're gonna correct what you're reading.

    41:07-41:08

    Take 'em.

    41:10-41:11

If we run out, we'll get more.

    41:12-41:16

But get God's word in your head, get God's word in your head, and get it in your heart.

    41:16-41:17

    You've gotta get started.

    41:18-41:20

Here's what I did with my Bible.

    41:21-41:32

This is one that I actually, for my personal study, real complicated system I had, but when I read through, the first thing I'll do is underline I was talking about a person.

    41:32-41:35

I'll just underline that, 'cause when I get through the text, I'm like, "Are we talking about, oh, okay.

    41:36-41:39

this guy, and I'll start underlining some things.

    41:39-41:41

    Here's what he's doing.

    41:41-41:43

Or this is what the Bible says.

    41:43-41:44

    You know, here's the subject.

    41:44-41:46

What does it say about that subject?

    41:46-41:47

    Just start there.

    41:48-41:49

    What does it say?

    41:49-41:51

What does it say about that subject?

    41:51-41:53

And how should my life look differently?

    41:54-41:59

If I do what God seems to be communicating is the right thing to do in this passage.

    42:00-42:01

    Start there.

    42:03-42:04

    We want to help you.

    42:04-42:07

We're going to be starting small groups also in November.

    42:07-42:09

That's the perfect place to get started.

    42:10-42:12

Bill, I'm sorry, your email didn't get corrected.

    42:13-42:18

    It's DLIPPIN, D-L-I-P-P-N, department of physical nurse.org.

    42:19-42:21

Bill gets a shout out to me because it didn't get fixed.

    42:23-42:26

We're going to be starting small groups next month.

    42:26-42:34

That's the perfect place for you to grow your knowledge of God, or to sit down with other people like yourself and say, "Hey, let's look at God's word together.

    42:34-42:36

I want you to understand, how does this apply in your life?

    42:36-42:37

Well, here's how it's applied in mine.

    42:37-42:39

How do you see yourself in your life this week?

    42:40-42:41

    Let's get on it.

    42:44-42:46

You can actually look through my Bible.

    42:46-42:48

There's places in the margins where I just wrote a question mark.

    42:48-42:49

    You know what that means?

    42:49-42:52

I mean, I just read something and I have no idea what's going on in there.

    42:52-42:53

I'll just be honest with you.

    42:53-43:00

I'll read stuff, I'll be like, okay, not a clue, question mark, and that means I'll go back later and take some time to study that.

    43:03-43:04

    It's training.

    43:05-43:06

    It's training.

    43:06-43:07

    But not just training.

    43:07-43:08

    It's training in righteousness.

    43:08-43:12

You see, doctrine, we talked about earlier, that's the head stuff.

    43:12-43:14

    Training in righteousness, that's doing.

    43:15-43:16

    That's heart stuff.

    43:17-43:18

So why is God training us?

    43:19-43:20

    Verse 17.

    43:23-43:24

What are we being trained for?

    43:24-43:28

That the man of God may be competent and quick to do whatever he wills.

    43:32-43:33

This word "living" is a word that is used in the Hebrew language.

    43:33-43:36

literally mean confident, it means perfect.

    43:38-43:42

I guess in our vernacular we think of it confident as meaning good enough.

    43:42-43:43

    That's confident.

    43:43-43:44

    Can you, yeah, slightly.

    43:46-43:49

That's not what it means in the Greek, it means perfect.

    43:52-43:55

We lack nothing for the job that God has for us.

    43:57-43:59

That's good news for me, it's good news for you.

    44:01-44:05

To know that whatever God has you facing, He's already totally equipped you.

    44:05-44:05

    Parents?

    44:08-44:15

Parents, you sometimes feel like, this parent thing, how did I get signed up for this?

    44:15-44:19

I don't know if I can do this in a way God wants me to disciple in.

    44:19-44:21

God wants me to disciple in, 'cause how can I do that?

    44:22-44:22

    Here's your answer.

    44:22-44:24

    God says, "I've equipped you.

    44:26-44:32

"I've got everything you need to disciple your children "right here, get in it.

    44:33-44:34

    There's nothing lacking.

    44:34-44:37

It's not the Bible plus, you know, that Spock guy or whatever.

    44:37-44:41

Mario used to think it was like the guy from Star Trek or a book about raising children.

    44:41-44:42

    It's a different Spock.

    44:43-44:45

But it's not the Bible plus Spock.

    44:45-44:47

    It's the Bible plus what?

    44:47-44:47

    Tell me.

    44:48-44:49

    Nothing.

    44:49-44:50

    This completes you.

    44:51-44:53

The training you've got to have for it.

    44:55-44:55

    Students.

    44:57-44:57

    You know, it's hard.

    44:58-45:02

More and more, we're getting away from-- I talk to young people all the time.

    45:02-45:04

It's just so hard to be a Christian in school now.

    45:04-45:06

So my friends make fun of me.

    45:06-45:10

They say really nasty things, and they do nasty things.

    45:10-45:11

    It's hard.

    45:11-45:14

How can I face this trial that God has before me?

    45:15-45:19

God says, this will equip you for everything that I had before you.

    45:21-45:21

    Employee.

    45:25-45:26

Pastor Jeff, it's really rough for our work.

    45:30-45:34

I'm not always sure how to handle the godlessness where I work.

    45:35-45:37

God says, I got something right here that will put me where I work.

    45:38-45:39

    That's where I work.

    45:41-45:49

About church member, being part of a church plant, plenty of opportunity to get involved, whether it's through worship or through small groups.

    45:50-45:52

I don't know the first thing about running a small group.

    45:53-45:54

How am I going to know how to run a small group?

    45:55-45:56

Where are we going to get a cook for that?

    45:58-46:03

ago, God says, I've got something that will equip you for the work that I've called you to do.

    46:05-46:07

So did you see the flow of the text?

    46:09-46:13

The Bible leads you to Christ. It lays a foundation of truth.

    46:15-46:25

It shows us where we're wrong and corrects us, and then it trains us to live on a foundation of truth, complete for every work that God calls us to do.

    46:28-46:33

    God's work accomplishes God's purposes.

    46:35-46:40

That's why in Romans 5 chapter 3, number 1, what's this church about?

    46:42-46:45

We're about proclaiming the authority of God's word without apology.

    46:47-46:50

We're not sorry for anything that God said.

    46:54-47:01

God promised He will accomplish His work with His Word.

    47:04-47:09

If God's Word is good, then great things.

    47:11-47:20

Father in heaven, as we close out this time, we just want to thank you for your work.

    47:22-47:31

I suppose we could take a shot in the dark or guess as to who we think you might be if we didn't have your work.

    47:32-47:37

But we'd probably come up with all kinds of crazy things, which I guess is what happens to the people who are rejecting you.

    47:39-47:47

We thank you that you've given us very clearly this is who you are, this is what you're about, and this is what you call us to.

    47:49-47:53

We thank you for your word. Father, forgive us when we don't take your word as seriously as you do.

    47:56-47:59

Father, I thank you that your word corrects us.

    48:00-48:05

And even for those of us today who maybe got a little bit off track, you're calling us back to yourself.

    48:08-48:10

    We thank you for that.

    48:11-48:18

I pray, Father, for the children right now that are being discipled in children's ministry, as your word is being instilled into them.

    48:19-48:23

But even more so, Father, I pray for their parents, as they seek to disciple their children.

    48:25-48:44

So, Father, I pray, I pray that we're just, this is week two for us, but I pray for as would be to proclaim the authority of your word without apology as we make disciples.

    48:45-48:47

Because we know well that that's not your word.

    48:51-48:52

    We love you.

    48:54-54:26

We praise you. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
