So this month, really, we've had one message, and the message is this.

    00:09-00:10

    I love to give.

    00:12-00:19

You know, we pass these little, you know, goofy looking felt bags, those little blue bags with the handles, and we pass those around.

    00:20-00:22

And like, why do we do that?

    00:23-00:24

    Because we love doing that.

    00:25-00:27

It's not the obligatory, "Oh, this is the part.

    00:28-00:29

    Every church does this.

    00:29-00:30

This is where we're supposed to give.

    00:31-00:32

That is so not our attitude.

    00:32-00:34

Our attitude is we love this part.

    00:34-00:36

We love seeing those goofy little bags come around.

    00:36-00:36

    Why?

    00:36-00:38

    Because I love to give.

    00:40-00:41

Like, why are you so fired up about giving?

    00:42-00:44

Well, that's what we've been talking about this month.

    00:44-00:50

Remember in this passage, 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 is really the key passage in the New Testament about Christian giving.

    00:51-01:01

Recall that there were all these poor Christians in Jerusalem being persecuted for their faith and losing their jobs and their businesses.

    01:01-01:05

So there's thousands upon thousands of these poor Christians.

    01:05-01:19

And Paul and some of these churches were taking up an offering from the outlying regions saying, "Let's support these Christians in Jerusalem." And what we've seen through this series is giving is about the heart.

    01:20-01:21

    Giving is voluntary.

    01:22-01:26

Giving isn't about a percentage or about an amount.

    01:26-01:36

It's about voluntarily choosing, deciding in your hearts, a biblical portion of what God has trusted to you.

    01:37-01:38

And it's between you and the Lord.

    01:40-01:41

So why do I love to give?

    01:41-01:42

    Just as a recap.

    01:42-01:43

Why do I love to give?

    01:43-01:45

This is what we've seen in this passage.

    01:46-01:47

First of all, I love to give because I'm a steward.

    01:49-01:50

    I'm a steward.

    01:50-01:51

    Nothing is mine.

    01:52-01:53

    Right? Nothing is mine.

    01:54-02:25

Many of you know a couple weeks ago, accident and I was really sad. I loved that car and it was a reminder to me, God just let me borrow that car for a few years. It wasn't mine. I wasn't going to drive that car to heaven. Okay? Nothing is mine. Nothing is mine. And remember Ben, remember how fun it was to give away somebody else's money? Remember that? Like we took money from the Fredericks and we gave it to you and said you could give it to anybody. Wasn't that See, it's fun when you give...

    02:26-02:29

He was like, "Yeah, this is great." Because he didn't have an attachment to it.

    02:30-02:31

    It came into his lap.

    02:32-02:35

And I said, "You can give it to anybody." And he did.

    02:36-02:37

    You know why that's fun?

    02:37-02:38

    It's because there's no attachment.

    02:38-02:38

    Nothing is mine.

    02:40-02:49

And until you understand that principle, that everything in your possession is really God's, and God gave it to you to use to glorify Him, give it away.

    02:52-02:55

Until you do that, you're not going to understand why people love to give.

    02:56-03:00

So I love to give because I'm a steward. I love to give, secondly, we talked about, because Jesus loves to give.

    03:03-03:04

    Jesus loves to give.

    03:05-03:19

If we had Jesus personally, physically, in the flesh, right here, right now, sitting with us, and we said, "Jesus, what's your favorite thing in the world?" He would say, "I love to give." How do we know He loves to give? Because His life was typified by that.

    03:20-03:49

himself. He emptied himself, and that was that beautiful verse, remember? That He became poor for us. He emptied himself so that He could give Himself fully, even all the way to the cross. And even beyond that, God is a giver of gifts. He gives us His Holy Spirit who gives us His peace, His joy. We are fellow heirs with Christ. God loves to give, and Because God's people, we love to give.

    03:50-03:52

God is conforming us into the image of His Son.

    03:53-03:55

So because He loves to give, we love to give.

    03:57-03:58

Then last week we talked about why do I love to give?

    03:58-04:00

I love to give because God gives to me.

    04:01-04:08

And at the risk of sounding like some liberal, charismatic TV preacher, we looked at what the Bible actually says.

    04:09-04:15

The principle of sowing and reaping that's true for agriculture is also true with money.

    04:16-04:23

The Bible says if you sow, if you give money, you will reap, you'll receive money.

    04:24-04:29

And your reaping is in proportion to your sowing, meaning if you sow a little, you're going to reap a little.

    04:29-04:31

If you sow a lot, you're going to reap a lot.

    04:32-04:36

And we saw last week that God gives you more so that you can give more.

    04:36-04:38

God wants you to meet a need, not feed your greed.

    04:40-04:42

So God says you keep giving it out.

    04:43-04:44

    I'll keep giving to you.

    04:46-04:48

God gets really fired up about that.

    04:49-04:51

You've seen a lot of reasons that I love to give.

    04:52-04:57

All of those are great reasons, but today we're going to look at the number one reason I love to give.

    04:58-05:06

This isn't like - Paul's like, okay, here's a bunch of reasons, and we're going to kind of round it off, kind of cap it off, and let's throw one more in.

    05:07-05:11

This is the biggest reason that I love to give.

    05:11-05:13

This is the biggest reason that we should love to give.

    05:13-05:14

And why is it the biggest reason?

    05:15-05:20

Because this reason is something that should typify the Christian's life in every area.

    05:21-05:24

This is the reason behind why you should have the marriage that you have.

    05:24-05:27

This is the reason behind why you should parent the way that you parent.

    05:27-05:31

This is the reason behind why we try to do what we do as a church.

    05:32-05:35

This is the reason that's actually the mission statement of the church.

    05:37-05:49

And it all comes from 1 Corinthians 10 .31 "Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." And that's what we're going to see in this passage.

    05:49-05:53

I love to give because giving glorifies God.

    05:54-05:57

Again, that's something that should typify every single area of our lives.

    05:58-05:59

Why are you doing it that way?

    05:59-06:01

I'm doing it because this is the way that glorifies God.

    06:02-06:04

So why do we give the way that we give?

    06:04-06:06

We're going to see it very clearly in this passage.

    06:09-06:10

Because we want to glorify God.

    06:10-06:12

But what does it mean to glorify God?

    06:13-06:15

To glorify God means to manifest His presence.

    06:17-06:19

To glorify God means to make Him known.

    06:20-06:24

In other words, glorifying God means you're letting people see God in you.

    06:24-06:31

Jesus said, "Let your light shine before men so they may glorify God in heaven." Now, your light isn't your light, right?

    06:31-06:33

It's God's light shining through you.

    06:34-06:42

But Jesus said, "Live your life in such a way that people see God at work through you, And then they're going to glorify Him, not you.

    06:43-06:45

    Because you're manifesting His presence.

    06:47-06:52

The biggest reason that we give to the work of the Kingdom is it glorifies God.

    06:52-06:58

The way that we give magnifies the Lord.

    07:00-07:04

So today, the question is how does giving glorify God?

    07:04-07:07

There's three things I want to share with you.

    07:08-07:10

    is giving results in thankfulness.

    07:12-07:13

You're going to see this again straight from the text.

    07:15-07:16

    Giving results in thankfulness.

    07:17-07:18

Look at verses 11 and 12.

    07:19-07:30

Paul says, "You will be enriched in every way, to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.

    07:32-07:39

For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.

    07:42-07:43

You see it right there in the text.

    07:43-07:45

Like what's happening with this giving?

    07:45-07:46

    What's happening?

    07:46-07:47

Paul's like, well, a couple of things.

    07:47-07:52

We're meeting the needs of the saints, but that's not even the main thing that's happening.

    07:52-07:57

The main thing that's happening is all these people are thanking God because of this giving.

    07:58-07:59

That's the main thing that's happening.

    08:01-08:02

And biblically, this is so important.

    08:02-08:04

    I'm gonna say this quickly.

    08:04-08:07

We could spend a whole sermon series on this topic.

    08:08-08:09

    Just write this down.

    08:09-08:11

    Thankfulness glorifies God.

    08:11-08:13

    Thankfulness glorifies God.

    08:13-08:14

    It does.

    08:14-08:27

2 Corinthians 4:15 says, "For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people, it may increase thanksgiving to the glory of God." Thankfulness glorifies God.

    08:28-08:31

In Romans 1:21, just write the reference down.

    08:32-08:39

But you have to see The Apostle Paul in Romans talks about how faith is linked to thankfulness.

    08:40-08:45

Meaning this, you find me somebody that's not thankful to God, I'll find you somebody that doesn't have faith.

    08:48-08:51

You find me somebody that says, "I don't think God's ever given me anything.

    08:52-08:56

God's never done anything for me and I'm not thankful." Well that guy doesn't have faith.

    08:56-08:59

But you find the guy that says, "You know, God has been so good to me.

    08:59-09:00

    Yes, life has been hard.

    09:00-09:02

I've had to deal with some very hard things in my life.

    09:03-09:04

    It's been very difficult.

    09:04-09:10

But you know, God has been so good, and He has sustained me, and He has taken me through some very hard times in my life.

    09:10-09:13

You find me that guy, and I'll say there's somebody that has faith.

    09:14-09:21

But you have to see, biblically, faith and thankfulness are connected.

    09:22-09:23

    You can't separate them.

    09:25-09:27

People thankful to God have faith.

    09:27-09:30

People not thankful to God exercise faith.

    09:30-09:45

That's Romans 121. Because you see, it's all from God. You see, when we give, it's because God moves our heart, and the recipient of the gift thanks God for the gift.

    09:47-09:53

Don't thank me, thank God. You see, that's how that works.

    09:54-10:05

The person gives, and And the recipient, while acknowledging that God used that person to give, the recipient ends up thanking God because God's the one that moved the heart for that person to give.

    10:05-10:06

    You following me on this?

    10:07-10:08

    This is so important.

    10:09-10:13

The point is, it's not the person that receives the glory.

    10:14-10:17

Like I gave this to you man, you should thank me.

    10:17-10:18

    No, you should thank God.

    10:19-10:24

Because God is the one who, He gave it to me in the first place, right?

    10:24-10:33

Everything I give came from God, so you should be thanking Him anyways because I'm just giving you something that He gave me in the first place.

    10:34-10:47

That's something I like to say to people the times that we're out and I treat somebody to lunch or coffee, "Oh no, no, let me get that, let me get that." Something I like to tell people is, "Oh no, don't worry about it, my father owns everything." Meaning what?

    10:47-10:51

Meaning everything in my wallet came from God in the first place.

    10:51-10:54

It's not like it's mine anyways.

    10:55-10:57

    So, it's all from God.

    11:00-11:18

Think of Moldova last February, when we took an offering to help rebuild the pastor's home that was a communist block apartment that was crumbling, and the pastor and his family were living in these horrible conditions, and we took an offering to help rebuild his home.

    11:19-11:20

    What resulted from that?

    11:22-11:25

Does the pastor and his family have a picture of me on their wall?

    11:26-11:30

And every morning, "Kids, kids, it's time to sing the Pastor Jeff song, come on!

    11:31-11:35

We're going to praise Pastor Jeff because Pastor Jeff got the church to send us money." Does he do that?

    11:36-11:38

    He absolutely does not.

    11:40-11:40

    Nor should he.

    11:42-11:43

Take a guess what they do.

    11:44-11:49

Do you think that they thank God because of the gifts that you gave?

    11:50-11:51

    Absolutely.

    11:51-11:53

So much praise has gone to God.

    11:53-11:54

    Thank you, God.

    11:54-11:56

    Look what God provided.

    11:56-11:59

Yes, He did it through Harvest Pittsburgh North and Harvest Pittsburgh East and some other churches.

    12:00-12:04

Yeah, that's how, those are the channels that God used, but it's all from God.

    12:04-12:09

So the thankfulness went to God, not to me, not to you, not to Jeremiah in Pittsburgh East.

    12:09-12:10

    The thankfulness went to God.

    12:11-12:14

You see, and that's why I love to give.

    12:15-12:20

Because when I give, people praise God for the gift.

    12:22-12:26

We can talk about the concepts of this all year.

    12:27-12:31

But you know, we have an opportunity to actually put this into practice.

    12:31-12:36

We have an opportunity right now in front of us, and I've been teasing it the last couple of weeks.

    12:37-12:38

    We have an opportunity.

    12:40-12:48

Just as these churches were giving to help support this ministry in Jerusalem, Harvest Bible Fellowship has approached us about an opportunity.

    12:49-12:56

They're building a training center in Romania like the one that I attended in Chicago to train ministers to plant churches all over Europe.

    12:56-13:04

And they're coming to us, and they're saying, "Can you partner with us in this mission?" An absolutely incredible opportunity.

    13:05-13:09

It is to be on the front end to do something like this?

    13:10-13:12

    It's a staggering opportunity.

    13:13-13:15

I mean, it's one thing to invest in a ministry.

    13:15-13:17

It's another thing to plant a church.

    13:18-13:26

But to invest in a ministry that is training pastors to plant churches - think of how far those offerings are going to go.

    13:27-13:32

We're talking generations of people, as Jay said, starving for the Word.

    13:34-13:39

We have an opportunity now to give to get this going.

    13:39-13:42

Isn't that just an incredible thing about giving?

    13:42-13:47

See, not everybody here can say that's great, I'm going to jump on a plane and head over there for three months and build it.

    13:47-13:49

    Not everybody can do that.

    13:49-13:53

But, every single one of us have something in our pockets that we can give.

    13:54-13:55

To say, you know what, I believe in this.

    13:55-14:01

And I believe God is calling me to give like the Macedonians, according to my means, beyond my means.

    14:03-14:10

And we want you to be prayerfully considering you're going to give to this ministry to get it going.

    14:10-14:18

And prayerfully consider you're going to be one of the people to head over there to be a part of getting things built.

    14:19-14:20

    Much is happening.

    14:21-14:22

    Incredible opportunity.

    14:23-14:29

So I love to give because giving results and thankfulness - people praise God for His provision through you.

    14:29-14:29

    Do you know that?

    14:30-14:34

For generations, people will be praising God through this training center.

    14:34-14:42

And think of the churches out of this training center of these passionate worshippers of Jesus Christ and people coming to Christ.

    14:43-14:45

And all this worship going up.

    14:45-14:47

    And how did it start?

    14:47-14:49

It started because God did something through you.

    14:50-14:52

And that's what Paul's talking about here.

    14:52-14:54

Giving has a way of doing that.

    14:56-14:59

God using you to make all of that worship happen.

    15:01-15:07

You mean I can give money and the end result of this money Is there going to be people worshiping God?

    15:08-15:09

Who do I make the check out to?

    15:12-15:15

It's an amazing cycle, isn't it, when you consider what we talked about last week.

    15:16-15:21

So we give, and then it results in thankfulness to God.

    15:21-15:32

So because we give, God gives us more to give, and then we give more, which results in more people being thankful to God, and God is glorified even more.

    15:32-15:38

So He gives us more to give so that we can have even more people thankful to God, and God has glorified more.

    15:38-15:41

Do you see this incredible cycle of grace?

    15:42-15:43

    Awesome.

    15:44-15:46

    Giving results in thankfulness.

    15:46-15:47

    #2 - Giving proves authenticity.

    15:49-15:50

    Giving proves authenticity.

    15:50-15:51

    Look at v. 13.

    15:53-16:08

"By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the Gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all the others.

    16:10-16:12

    Giving proves authenticity.

    16:12-16:19

See, this would have been very important for the Corinthian church, because let's be honest, the Corinthian church - they were a messed up church.

    16:19-16:20

    They were messed up.

    16:21-16:22

    Read 1 Corinthians sometime.

    16:22-16:23

    They were messed up.

    16:23-16:26

1 Corinthians 5 - do you know in the Corinthian church?

    16:26-16:35

There was a guy in the church who's having an illicit affair, a physical illicit affair with his stepmother.

    16:36-16:44

Okay, so his dad gets remarried and this guy is messing around with his stepmother and like the church was bragging about it.

    16:45-16:47

Okay, and I'm not trying to be crass, read 1 Corinthians 5.

    16:47-16:49

    They were boasting about it.

    16:49-16:54

There were a lot of high fives and pats on the back and oh man, look at this guy.

    16:54-16:56

And Paul's like, what are you doing?

    16:56-16:58

You shouldn't be bragging about this.

    16:58-17:00

Paul's like, "What in the world is going on in that church?

    17:00-17:05

Throw him out!" Bragging about such a gross sin.

    17:05-17:06

    Throw him out.

    17:06-17:07

    That's 1 Corinthians 5.

    17:08-17:10

So the point is, it was a messed up church.

    17:12-17:13

It was a messed up church.

    17:13-17:25

And I'm sure as word got around of these kinds of things, there are probably people wondering, I wonder if there's even any really like born again people attending the church in Corinth.

    17:26-17:31

I mean, you really think that there's anybody here Christian, I mean, obviously, all their salvation's in question now.

    17:31-17:35

If this is the kind of garbage that they're doing, well, Paul knew.

    17:36-17:41

Paul knew, listen, they're born again people that are like us, still learning, still growing, right?

    17:41-17:43

Anybody here have it all figured out?

    17:44-17:45

    Anybody, anybody at all?

    17:45-17:46

Like, yeah, it's all figured out.

    17:46-17:49

I'm like as good as I'm going to get, not me.

    17:51-17:52

    We're all on a journey, aren't we?

    17:52-17:53

And Paul knew that about them.

    17:53-17:59

He says, they are born again and they're growing And Christ is doing something in them.

    18:02-18:06

And that's why he says, "Look, this giving is going to - what's it going to prove?

    18:07-18:08

How's it going to glorify God?

    18:08-18:09

    Look at this phrase.

    18:09-18:18

Because of your submission flowing from your confession of the Gospel of Christ." What's he saying?

    18:18-18:25

He's saying that one of the ways that giving glorifies God, Giving is a demonstration of true faith.

    18:26-18:29

Giving is a demonstration of true faith.

    18:31-18:36

It's not as if giving is what gets you saved.

    18:38-18:39

That's not the point at all.

    18:39-18:43

Paul is saying that giving is a demonstration that you truly are saved.

    18:43-18:47

Because you did confess Christ, giving demonstrates salvation.

    18:47-18:49

How can you tell if somebody is saved?

    18:50-18:53

Can you tell someone, say, what's the fruit of salvation?

    18:53-18:56

Is it based on what they say or by what they do?

    18:58-19:01

Well, according to James, faith is demonstrated by what people do.

    19:02-19:13

James says, "Faith without works is dead, but faith with works is alive, and giving is one of the most beautiful acts of worship." Want some evidence?

    19:15-19:15

    Let's look at the disciples.

    19:16-19:18

We're going to be jumping back into Mark here next week.

    19:19-19:24

And we've already seen this in our study through Mark, where the disciples were always arguing about stupid things.

    19:25-19:27

Like, which one of us is the greatest?

    19:29-19:31

While they were walking around with Jesus.

    19:31-19:33

    But then something interesting happens.

    19:33-19:35

They're arguing about which is the greatest in Mark.

    19:36-19:45

And then you get to the book of Acts, and they're like giving everything for the common good of everybody.

    19:45-19:55

And you're like, wait a minute, How did they get from these self-serving, sort of arrogant people to pouring themselves out for Jesus people?

    19:56-19:57

    What happened in the middle?

    19:57-19:59

What happened in the middle was the Holy Spirit came.

    19:59-20:01

And the Holy Spirit changed them.

    20:03-20:05

I believe that's one of the ways the Holy Spirit transformed them.

    20:07-20:14

They were, you know, in Jesus' day, so much about themselves, their glory, their attention.

    20:17-20:23

After Jesus' death and resurrection and after the Holy Spirit came, they were about giving.

    20:23-20:25

Read Acts 2. Read Acts 4.

    20:25-20:26

    That's what the church did.

    20:26-20:28

They gave. They gave. They gave.

    20:29-20:30

So that everybody was taken care of.

    20:30-20:33

It says that there was no needy among them.

    20:34-20:35

They shared everything that they owned.

    20:37-20:41

Church, nothing fires a Christian up more than seeing Jesus change a life.

    20:42-20:49

That giving generously is one of the most visible and tangible ways that demonstrates that Jesus has changed a life.

    20:51-20:55

Because God truly has a person when He has their money.

    20:57-20:59

    So giving proves authenticity.

    20:59-21:01

    And finally, giving grows relationships.

    21:02-21:04

    Giving grows relationships.

    21:04-21:05

    Look at v. 14.

    21:07-21:14

Paul says, "While they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

    21:17-21:23

When Jesus changes someone, the reality that the world sees is the love that we have for one another.

    21:23-21:24

    Sort of counterintuitive.

    21:24-21:35

I would have thought that Jesus would have said, "By this, all men will know that you're my disciples by the way that you love lost people." But He didn't say it was about the way we love lost people.

    21:36-21:38

Jesus said it was about the way that we love each other.

    21:40-21:41

    Scripture's so clear in that.

    21:41-21:49

John 13, 35, "By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." So the world is looking at us.

    21:49-21:52

Do we really love each other as Christians?

    21:55-21:59

And that's why in this passage, we see signs of deep loving relationship.

    21:59-22:01

Did you see that in verse 14?

    22:01-22:04

He says they long for you, and they pray for you.

    22:04-22:12

See, that relationship was happening to the point that they were wanting to see them, They were constantly remembering Him in their prayers.

    22:14-22:15

And it was because of the giving.

    22:16-22:19

Now listen, I'm not saying that we're buying friends.

    22:19-22:20

    I'm not saying that.

    22:20-22:21

I don't want anybody to leave.

    22:21-22:23

So I hear what Pastor Jeff is saying.

    22:23-22:24

He's saying that we should buy friends.

    22:25-22:26

    So Tony, I like you.

    22:26-22:27

    Will you be my friend?

    22:27-22:28

I'll buy you a dirt bike.

    22:28-22:30

If I buy you a dirt bike, will you be my friend?

    22:31-22:31

    Tony, will?

    22:31-22:33

    Okay, that's fantastic.

    22:33-22:34

    He's a cheap friend.

    22:36-22:49

You're a cheap friend, Tony, because I asked somebody else the other day, "Will you be my friend if I buy you a dirt bike?" And he said, "You're gonna have to up it "to something with four wheels." I'm like, "Yeah, I'm kinda buying one of those myself." And I'm not saying that you buy your friends.

    22:51-22:52

Like, well, then what are you saying?

    22:53-23:02

I'm saying there's a sense in which relationships form and deepen when someone is willing to give in order to ease another's financial burden.

    23:04-23:06

And I wanna share it from a different perspective.

    23:07-23:12

We were talking about giving to Moldova giving to Romania. But you understand that we've been on the other end of that, right?

    23:13-23:39

Before this church launched and money was pretty tight, right Ken? You remember that money was pretty tight? Harvest Bible Chapel up in Oakville in Niagara, you know, they're just like right down the road from each other. I've told you this, they sent us somewhere between seven and eight thousand dollars. They're just like, we were going to do some missional giving, we thought you guys could use it, here you go. So how do you think I feel about those churches? You see, there's a There's a connection there with Pastor Robbie Simons and Pastor Darrell Molyneux.

    23:40-23:43

There's a connection that I have with those people that I always remember.

    23:43-23:44

    You know what?

    23:44-23:48

We were in a tough spot and they reached out to us by giving.

    23:50-23:56

Now granted, we had hundreds of people that were like, hey, best of luck to you, I'm pulling for you, I'm praying for you, that's fantastic.

    23:57-24:01

But there's something special about these people that said we are willing to invest in you.

    24:03-24:05

It happened even more recently with Northway.

    24:06-24:11

At the end of a baptism service, they took an offering and they gave a portion of that offering to us.

    24:11-24:11

    Why?

    24:14-24:14

    To bless us.

    24:16-24:17

    We didn't ask for it.

    24:17-24:24

I didn't have a private conversation with Pastor Kent or Pastor Scott like, "Look, I appreciate you doing this "because we're broke." None of that happened.

    24:25-24:30

They're just like, "We just wanna bless you guys "because we love you guys and we love our partnership." So they gave us money.

    24:32-24:47

So I'm saying that being on the other end of that, I understand the truth that there's some kind of a, there's some kind of an affection and a bond and a unity that comes when ministries are being supported by other ministries like that.

    24:48-24:50

That's exactly what Paul's talking about here.

    24:50-24:52

When you give, that's why they're longing for you.

    24:52-25:01

That's why they're praying for you, because you're being united and unified and knit together because you are willing to invest in them financially.

    25:03-25:06

Thinking of what's going to happen in Romania, as I already said.

    25:07-25:10

These churches are going to think very fondly of you.

    25:11-25:13

There's a church in Pittsburgh that never met us!

    25:15-25:16

    Praise God for them!

    25:16-25:24

And I'm praying for them, and I'm praying for that church, and I'm praying for that ministry because God used them so mightily in our lives.

    25:27-25:30

So giving makes for unity and a love and a gospel like nothing else.

    25:31-25:36

Because money used rightly can make friends.

    25:38-25:45

But if you're still sort of like, I'm not sure about this using money to like buy friends thing that you're talking about.

    25:45-25:46

    Just jot this down.

    25:46-25:47

    Luke chapter 16.

    25:48-25:49

This is one of my favorite parables.

    25:50-25:52

Because it is so weird compared to the other parables.

    25:52-25:54

But Jesus told this parable, and I mean weird in a good way.

    25:55-25:59

But Jesus told this parable in Luke 16 that's just kind of crazy when you think about it.

    25:59-26:01

Jesus is like, okay, so this, I'm paraphrasing.

    26:02-26:03

I want you to read, I'm paraphrasing.

    26:03-26:08

But Jesus is like, okay, so this guy, this guy worked for this guy that owned all this stuff.

    26:08-26:09

And this guy was a manager.

    26:10-26:12

And this manager knew that he was getting fired.

    26:13-26:13

    Like, you know what?

    26:14-26:16

We found out that there's some shady things going on.

    26:16-26:18

You're gonna be out, you're fired.

    26:19-26:20

So this guy knew he was getting fired.

    26:21-26:25

So what this guy did was he called in all these people that owed his master money.

    26:25-26:45

He's like, "What's your bill?" The guy's like, "Well, I owe 100." He goes, "Cut it in half, write down 50." And he called in the next guy, "How much do you owe?" And he's like, "Well, I owe like 100 or whatever." And he's like, "Write down 80." So he called in all these people that owed and said, "Cut your bill down." It was like, you know, price to sell, price to move.

    26:45-26:47

We are cutting debt here today.

    26:48-26:49

    Why did he do that?

    26:51-26:54

because he knew he was about to get kicked to the curb.

    26:54-26:56

He didn't have anywhere to go.

    26:57-27:02

But all of a sudden, he just made for himself a handful of friends that were sort of indebted to him.

    27:04-27:09

That's why the Bible says, Jesus said the master commended this manager for his shrewdness.

    27:10-27:15

I'm sure he didn't commend him for what actually happened in the sense of, you just ripped me off a lot of money.

    27:15-27:16

    That wasn't the commendation.

    27:16-27:20

The commendation was, dude, that was actually kind of clever what you did.

    27:21-27:30

Because when I can you here, you're going to have all these people that are going to let you stay with them because you looked out for them.

    27:31-27:33

Why did Jesus tell that story?

    27:34-27:35

    Jesus made the application.

    27:35-27:40

He says, by the way, worldly people are a lot smarter about using money than kingdom people.

    27:40-27:47

He says, but I'm telling you, you can win eternal friends with unrighteous mammon, which is money.

    27:48-27:51

Because you can win friends for eternity with money.

    27:51-27:52

    You can win people.

    27:52-27:54

Jesus said they're going to welcome you into heaven.

    27:55-27:58

There are going to be people in heaven waiting for you when you cross over.

    27:58-28:01

And they're going to be like, "It was because of your giving.

    28:02-28:10

It was because of the way that you invested in me and this ministry that affected me that I'm here in heaven right now." Jesus said there are going to be people in heaven greeting you.

    28:10-28:10

    Why?

    28:11-28:18

are willing to give money in the name of the Lord to advance His kingdom.

    28:19-28:22

So can you use money to win friends according to Jesus?

    28:22-28:23

    Yes.

    28:24-28:27

Not only yes you can, but Jesus said yes you should.

    28:28-28:31

    Invest your money in people.

    28:34-28:36

    And that grows relationships.

    28:37-28:40

I know that sounds very weird to hear in church.

    28:41-28:42

I encourage you to be a Bible student.

    28:42-28:44

That's what it says here in 2 Corinthians 9.

    28:45-28:46

Read the parable in Luke 16.

    28:48-28:50

Okay, and then we have verse 15 as I close.

    28:51-28:52

    Look at verse 15.

    28:53-29:05

Paul says, "Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift." "Thanks be to God for his," what kind of gift?

    29:05-29:06

    He says it's inexpressible.

    29:06-29:08

So what do you think he's talking about?

    29:08-29:09

What do you think he's talking about?

    29:09-29:11

Go ahead and shout it out if you think you know the answer.

    29:13-29:14

What is the inexpressible gift of God?

    29:15-29:19

Jesus, okay, everybody else now, what's the inexpressible gift of God?

    29:20-29:22

Jesus, that's obviously who he's talking about, right?

    29:22-29:24

God's given me lots of stuff that I can describe.

    29:24-29:26

He's given me an awesome wife, an awesome family.

    29:26-29:28

He's given me so much, an awesome church.

    29:28-29:30

I can describe you guys though.

    29:30-29:33

You know something I can't fully describe is how awesome Jesus is.

    29:34-29:35

And that's what he's talking about.

    29:35-29:37

That's kind of a weird way to end this passage, don't you think, Deana?

    29:38-29:43

because I was thinking about this this week while you were doing what you do, and I'm thinking about this.

    29:46-29:49

He has this section in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 that's all about giving.

    29:49-29:54

And something they teach you when you go to preaching school is that you have to land the plane.

    29:55-30:01

Meaning your conclusion should be tight and memorable and meaningful, right?

    30:03-30:07

So as I was thinking about this week, "You know, how was Paul gonna land this plane?

    30:08-30:12

He just gave this awesome, Holy Spirit inspired discourse on giving.

    30:13-30:20

How was he gonna land this plane?" Then Paul's like, "Okay, so they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

    30:23-30:26

Amen." Like, no, that wasn't quite, wouldn't quite do it.

    30:26-30:35

Or, you know, he's like, "Well, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you, "So, give." Okay?

    30:36-30:37

No, that couldn't quite do it.

    30:40-30:43

How could Paul conclude this series on giving?

    30:45-30:48

He says thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift.

    30:49-30:50

    And here's the point.

    30:52-30:53

It all goes back to Jesus.

    30:56-30:59

It all goes back to Jesus.

    31:01-31:02

    All of it.

    31:03-31:04

What do you mean by that?

    31:06-31:14

Listen, if I have to forgive someone for a wrong they committed against me, who is my motive?

    31:15-31:15

    Who is my example?

    31:16-31:17

And who is my power for forgiveness?

    31:17-31:21

Somebody could get up and list all of the verses in the Bible about forgiveness.

    31:22-31:25

But at the end of the day, do you know what motivates me to forgive?

    31:25-31:26

    Jesus.

    31:28-31:29

It all goes back to Him.

    31:30-31:34

    Or, good works.

    31:35-31:37

What motivates me to do good works?

    31:38-31:46

You can give me all the reasons why it's important to work for the Lord, and how important good works are, but at the end of the day, what motivates me?

    31:46-31:47

    Jesus.

    31:48-31:56

We can talk about prayer, and all the benefits of prayer, and the way that God works through prayer, but at the end of the day, going to motivate me to pray?

    31:57-31:58

    Because Jesus prayed.

    32:00-32:01

So now we're talking about giving.

    32:03-32:09

And here's the need, and these people have needs, and God has given you, and even if you don't have much, you have something to give.

    32:10-32:12

But if you give, God's going to give you more, but it's an act of faith.

    32:12-32:17

And he's talking about all these concepts about giving, but it all goes back to what?

    32:18-32:19

It all goes back to Jesus.

    32:20-32:25

and say, "Listen, if there's somebody here that's still like, 'Yeah, I'm not really sure.

    32:26-32:38

I'm not really sold on the giving thing.'" Maybe there's somebody here that says, "Yeah, Pastor Jeff, I hear what you're saying, and I'm not really sure." My answer to you is, it goes back to Jesus, doesn't it?

    32:41-32:44

Because He's the giver to me.

    32:45-32:48

He's the example of giving sacrificially.

    32:50-32:52

He's the example of giving worshipfully.

    32:53-32:55

He's the example of giving lovingly.

    32:56-33:07

And because of all He is, and because of all He does, and because of everything He promises, I say, I love to give.

    33:08-33:09

    How about you?

    33:10-33:14

Father in Heaven, it certainly does go back to Jesus.

    33:16-33:28

And You have taught us so much stuff in these chapters about all of the promises and blessings and ways that You work as we give.

    33:29-33:35

And I pray, Father, the thing that we would leave with is I love to give because of Jesus.

    33:38-33:46

Father, I pray that as we are preparing to partner with this training center being built in Romania, that You would move our hearts.

    33:47-33:50

You would stir our hearts to be generous towards this endeavor.

    33:52-33:55

The advancement of Your kingdom for the glory of Your name.

    33:57-34:03

Let us be people who don't just talk about giving, who don't just acknowledge that giving is good.

    34:03-34:05

    Let us be generous givers.

    34:07-34:10

In Your glorious name that we pray, Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read 2 Corinthians 9:11-15

  1. How would you define what it means to "glorify God"? How does financial giving glorify God?

  2. In 2 Corinthians 9:13, Paul says that giving is a proof of genuine salvation. How is giving an evidence that someone is truly born again?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another to grow as givers: rightly motivated, generous, and trusting God!

  • 00:00-00:03

Turn in your Bibles with me to the book of 2 Corinthians.

    00:05-00:10

And we're going to be picking up in our series, "I Love to Give." Are you there yet?

    00:11-00:12

    Are you there yet?

    00:12-00:13

Let me hear you say it.

    00:13-00:16

I want to hear you say, "I love to give." Let me hear it.

    00:17-00:19

It sounds like most of you are there.

    00:20-00:23

My goal by the end of this month is that we are all there.

    00:24-00:25

Let me hear it one more time.

    00:26-00:28

    I love to give.

    00:29-00:35

Giving isn't a chore or an obligation or it's my bill that I have to pay to the church.

    00:37-00:41

For the Christian, giving is something that we love to do.

    00:42-00:47

And we've been going through 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, a key passage on giving.

    00:48-00:50

    Understand it's not about percentage.

    00:51-00:53

And it's not about who gives the most.

    00:54-00:56

    Giving is about the heart.

    00:57-00:58

We saw that in chapter 8, verse 7.

    01:00-01:00

    Giving is worship.

    01:02-01:10

And if you want a key verse to kind of sum up everything that we're talking about, look again at chapter 8 and verse 3.

    01:11-01:32

In talking of the Macedonians, Paul said, "For they gave according to their means as I can testify, and beyond their means of their own accord." There are three things that you need to understand about New Testament biblical giving according to their means.

    01:32-01:35

God's not asking you to give according to what someone else makes.

    01:37-01:42

You give according to what God has entrusted you with.

    01:42-01:44

Then He says beyond their means.

    01:44-01:46

They were willing to give sacrificially.

    01:46-01:51

And there are times in our worship and giving, we give more than normally.

    01:52-01:53

    We give sacrificially.

    01:53-01:58

We sell something so we have something to give for a ministry, or we're willing to give something up.

    01:59-02:01

Again, that's between you and the Lord.

    02:03-02:05

And then you see the third thing there - of their own accord.

    02:07-02:20

It wasn't Paul threatening them to say, look, we need to raise some money, and I'm sending Big Bruno by your house to shake you down to make sure that we have the money for the ministry that we need.

    02:20-02:22

He didn't try to give some kind of a guilt trip.

    02:23-02:29

show them some commercial of the church in Jerusalem with Sarah McLachlan music playing in the background.

    02:31-02:39

It's not about guilt trip or coercing or tricking people of your own accord.

    02:39-02:40

This is between you and the Lord.

    02:40-02:43

We're going to see that again in this passage that we're looking at today.

    02:44-02:47

In chapter 8, verse 16, down through chapter 9, verse 5.

    02:48-02:49

We're not going to be covering that in this series.

    02:49-02:50

    You can read that.

    02:51-02:59

But basically in that passage, The Apostle Paul is giving a stamp of approval on Titus and the brothers that are going with him to receive the offering.

    02:59-03:02

Don't you want to know that the people that are handling the money are trustworthy?

    03:03-03:06

And you need to know that about Harvest Bible Chapel.

    03:06-03:10

The people that handle the money are the most trustworthy people that I know.

    03:11-03:15

I have never laid awake at night wondering if funds are being misappropriated.

    03:16-03:18

You have that going on in this passage here.

    03:19-03:20

I encourage you to read that.

    03:21-03:23

    These are brothers with integrity.

    03:24-03:26

And they're coming to receive the offering.

    03:27-03:30

And four times in that passage, he tells them, "Be ready." Okay, be ready.

    03:30-03:31

We're going to be taking an offering.

    03:31-03:32

    Are you ready for it?

    03:32-03:32

    Be ready.

    03:33-03:33

    Be ready.

    03:33-03:33

    Be ready.

    03:36-03:40

But we're going to be jumping down to chapter 9 and verse 6.

    03:41-03:47

And today we're going to get to the key principle about giving.

    03:49-03:50

And we can't tune out at all.

    03:52-04:04

Because the subject that I'm going to cover today, there is so much bad teaching about what I'm about to show you from God's Word today.

    04:04-04:07

There is so much bad teaching on this subject.

    04:08-04:12

I think of that goofy guy on the Christian TV channel.

    04:12-04:14

Maybe you've seen him, that Dr. Murdoch.

    04:14-04:15

Have you ever seen that Dr. Murdoch?

    04:18-04:23

I don't know why there's times that I've stopped and watched him for a few minutes, because a few minutes is really all I can stomach.

    04:24-04:30

But his thing is, you plant an uncommon seed, and God will give you an uncommon harvest.

    04:30-04:42

And the Holy Spirit just told me there's a man out there right now who's watching this program, and your child is sitting by your side, and you're wondering whether or not you should be giving.

    04:42-04:43

I'm not talking to anybody else right now.

    04:43-04:44

    I'm talking to you, sir.

    04:45-04:46

    You plant that seed.

    04:48-04:51

And you have people duped into thinking this guy is some kind of prophet.

    04:53-04:59

And "Oh, he's talking to me." This qualifications that he just laid out probably covered thousands of people that might be watching.

    05:01-05:11

One time when I was watching, he said, "You know, I had a man come up to me and he said, 'What kind of car do you want?'" And he said, "I have cars.

    05:11-05:14

I have every car that I could use." And this man says, "Well, there's this new BMW coming out.

    05:15-05:16

Do you have that?" And he said, "No, I don't even have that.

    05:16-05:19

It hasn't been released." And this man says, "I can get you that car.

    05:19-05:29

You tell me what color you want." And I told him, "Black exterior, black interior." The next morning, that car was sitting in my driveway.

    05:30-05:45

And then this man looks into the camera, and he has the audacity to say, "And God wants to do the same thing in your life." It's sad that people fall for it.

    05:47-05:50

It's sad that there are people that eat that garbage up.

    05:53-05:54

    That's what God's like.

    05:55-05:59

You know, I'm living paycheck to paycheck and I'm having a hard time making ends meet.

    05:59-06:04

And my children have needs and I'm having a hard time meeting their basic needs.

    06:05-06:12

But this guy on TV just got done telling me because his faith is so great, God's given him more cars than he knows how to drive.

    06:13-06:16

And the Lord will deal with him.

    06:18-06:34

But because we see and hear some of this crazy teaching like that, when we get to this passage that we're going to be looking at today, people like us will either avoid it, and some of us will just flat out deny what it says.

    06:34-06:46

Some of the things I'm going to share with you, there are some people here today that are like, "I'm not really sure that that's true," and you have to take that up with the Lord, but I want you to see what the Bible actually says. Not what you think it says.

    06:48-06:55

Not what you've heard somebody else say that it says. I want you, Bible open, to look and see what it actually says. Are you ready?

    06:57-07:11

I hope you take notes on your outline. This is God's economics 101. Okay, what we're going to do, because this is so important, this This is so important, that's why it gets so messed up so often.

    07:12-07:15

That's why Satan would twist this so often.

    07:16-07:21

What we're going to see here is so important, and it's so misimplied.

    07:21-07:30

What we're going to do is we're going to take one verse at a time so that we really understand how God's economics really happens.

    07:30-07:32

How God's economics, how that really works.

    07:33-07:36

So, number one, jot this down, the principle.

    07:37-07:37

    The principle.

    07:39-07:40

Look at chapter 9, verse 6.

    07:41-07:42

Paul says, "The point is this.

    07:44-07:49

Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly.

    07:51-08:05

And whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully." Now you understand when you read the Bible, you need to read it in context, okay?

    08:05-08:11

It wasn't like Paul in chapter eight was like talking about money, money, money, money, money.

    08:11-08:12

Now he gets to chapter nine.

    08:12-08:15

He's like, here's a little proverb about agriculture for all you farmers out there.

    08:16-08:18

Okay, now let's get back to talking about money.

    08:19-08:20

He's obviously talking about money, right?

    08:21-08:28

Sowing and reaping, that's an agricultural term, but it applies to biblical giving.

    08:30-08:32

This principle - it's in the Old Testament, first of all.

    08:33-08:37

Our kids in the Harvest Kids ministry learned a verse last month.

    08:39-08:43

Proverbs 19:17 How many parents learned that with your kids?

    08:43-08:47

"Whoever is generous to the poor..." What?

    08:48-08:54

"...lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed." This is an Old Testament concept.

    08:54-08:57

    It's in Proverbs 11:24-25.

    08:59-09:01

Some people want to leave this teaching in the Old Testament.

    09:03-09:04

    But Jesus taught this.

    09:04-09:05

    Luke 6:38.

    09:05-09:07

Jesus taught this same thing in here.

    09:07-09:09

This passage that we're looking at.

    09:10-09:12

    Paul revisits the principle.

    09:12-09:14

Again, all of them are the same.

    09:14-09:17

    Proverbs, Luke 6, 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

    09:18-09:19

    All teaching the same thing.

    09:20-09:23

You give to God, and He gives to you.

    09:25-09:26

First of all, we're going to break it down here.

    09:28-09:33

Paul says the point is this, whoever - that's an important word, right?

    09:34-09:34

    Whoever.

    09:37-09:39

So you're like, Pastor Jeff, I don't make very much money.

    09:39-09:41

Does this principle apply to you?

    09:42-09:44

Here's a real easy way to find out.

    09:44-09:46

Are you under the category of whoever?

    09:48-09:49

    Are you a whoever?

    09:50-09:52

If you're a whoever, this applies to you.

    09:53-09:55

But you're like, man, I really messed up my finances.

    09:56-09:56

    I went into debt.

    09:57-09:58

    having a hard time.

    09:58-09:59

    Does this apply to me?

    10:00-10:01

    Yes or no?

    10:02-10:02

    Yes.

    10:03-10:06

I make a lot of money, and I give a lot of money.

    10:06-10:07

    Does that apply to you?

    10:09-10:10

    Yes.

    10:10-10:15

I'm just learning how to give biblically, and I'm still trying to figure some things out.

    10:15-10:16

I'm not quite there, but I'm learning.

    10:16-10:17

    Does this apply to you?

    10:19-10:20

    Yes. This applies to anyone.

    10:22-10:28

No matter what you do, no matter where you work, no matter how much you make, Whoever applies to every single one of us.

    10:28-10:28

    Whoever.

    10:30-10:31

    This is for you.

    10:34-10:34

    Whoever what?

    10:34-10:38

He says whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly.

    10:38-10:41

Whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

    10:42-10:47

So what Paul is saying is what is true in agriculture is true with money.

    10:49-10:51

Entire books have been written about this subject.

    10:51-10:54

I just want to share three things under this subheading, the principle.

    10:56-10:59

Three things you need to know about this principle of sowing and reaping.

    10:59-11:00

It's true in agriculture. It's true with money.

    11:01-11:02

The first one is this. Write this down.

    11:02-11:03

    Number one, let go.

    11:06-11:08

Let go. That's the first thing, right?

    11:08-11:11

Now think of the farmer with a bag of seed.

    11:11-11:19

If that farmer has that bag of seed, and he's just walking up and down his field thinking, I need to plant this.

    11:22-11:25

But if I plant this, I'm not going to have any seed anymore.

    11:26-11:30

And since I'm a farmer, I should have seed, but if I stick it in the ground, I'm not going to have seed.

    11:31-11:33

    That's a silly dilemma, isn't it?

    11:35-11:43

The truth is, he's not going to be able to have a harvest at all unless he's willing to let go of the seed.

    11:46-11:49

He has to be willing to let it go.

    11:51-11:53

He has to be willing to say I'm going to throw it out.

    11:55-12:00

I'm not going to go back and collect it later thinking I changed my mind, maybe I shouldn't have done that.

    12:01-12:02

He has to be willing to let it go.

    12:03-12:05

And that's how it is with money.

    12:07-12:11

Like the farmer with the seed, we have to be willing to say, you know what, I have this.

    12:12-12:18

And if I give it to advance the kingdom, it's no longer going to be in my hand.

    12:19-12:20

You have to be willing to let it go.

    12:21-12:22

But that leads us to the second thing.

    12:24-12:25

The principle of sowing and reaping.

    12:25-12:27

What's true with agriculture is true with money.

    12:27-12:28

    Let it go.

    12:28-12:30

The second thing is it requires faith.

    12:31-12:32

    It requires faith.

    12:35-12:43

See, the reason that farmer is willing to throw the seed out is because he knows When that seed takes root, it's going to grow.

    12:47-12:49

    Now can he prove that?

    12:51-12:51

    Ish?

    12:53-12:56

If you ask a farmer, "Well, how do you know what your plant's going to grow?" What's he going to say?

    12:57-13:02

He's going to say, "Well, it just kind of does." You know, that's how it always happens.

    13:03-13:04

    That's how it's happened before.

    13:04-13:06

And I have some farmer friends, and that's how it's happened to them.

    13:07-13:22

So, I know that if I'm going to grow anything, I have to be willing to let it go, and I'm going to have to trust that laws of science that God created are going to work, and this is going to grow.

    13:23-13:25

It takes some trust on the farmer's part.

    13:26-13:27

And so it is with money.

    13:27-13:28

You have to be willing to let it go.

    13:29-13:40

But this promise that we're going to look at today, you have to exercise faith to say, is God really going to keep His Word as it pertains to money?

    13:41-13:41

We're going to get to that.

    13:42-13:43

So you have to let it go.

    13:43-13:44

    It requires faith.

    13:45-13:48

The third thing is very simply, it's proportionate.

    13:49-13:50

You sow a little, you reap a little.

    13:50-13:51

You sow much, you reap much.

    13:52-13:53

    It's proportionate.

    13:53-13:54

    It's true with agriculture.

    13:54-13:55

    It's true with money.

    13:57-13:59

Listen, this is a biblical truth.

    14:01-14:03

What is true with agriculture is true with money.

    14:03-14:08

If you sow a little, you're going to reap a little.

    14:08-14:11

If you sow a lot, going to reap a lot.

    14:12-14:15

OK, now we got the farmer with the bag of seed, and he's walking out in the field.

    14:15-14:16

And he says, you know what?

    14:16-14:18

I understand I need to let it go.

    14:18-14:23

I understand I'm going to have to trust the laws of nature to work.

    14:25-14:28

I'm still hesitant about not having some seed for myself.

    14:28-14:29

So here's what I'm going to do.

    14:29-14:31

I'm just going to plant one seed.

    14:33-14:33

    Could he do that?

    14:33-14:34

    Well, sure he could.

    14:35-14:37

And what's going to happen when it's harvest time?

    14:37-14:38

He's going to have one plant.

    14:39-14:40

    He sowed a little.

    14:41-14:42

He's going to reap a little.

    14:44-14:46

But the Bible says that's also true about money.

    14:48-14:55

If you are willing to let go by faith and give God a little, He's going to return to you a little.

    14:58-15:07

But if you're willing to let go by faith, give to God, give Him much, He is going to return to you much.

    15:10-15:12

If that farmer says, "You know what, I'm going to let go.

    15:12-15:24

I'm believing this is going to work." And he throws all the seed out, he's going to have a huge harvest as compared to throwing one seed out and just getting one plant.

    15:24-15:29

I mean, it's easy to understand with the farmer.

    15:29-15:34

The problem is when we start talking about money, And all of a sudden we think, is that really true?

    15:35-15:37

This is what the Word of God says.

    15:38-15:38

    Okay?

    15:39-15:42

This truth is based on God's integrity.

    15:42-15:44

This is God keeping His Word.

    15:46-15:47

    It's proportionate.

    15:48-15:51

The more you give, the more God's going to give back to you.

    15:52-15:54

And we've seen it throughout this passage.

    15:54-15:55

We've talked about it all month.

    15:55-15:57

Giving is a measure of your faith.

    15:59-16:03

Jesus said where your treasure is there, "Your heart will be also." And here it is again.

    16:04-16:06

Giving is a measure of your faith.

    16:08-16:09

How much faith do you have?

    16:10-16:13

It's going to show up on how much you give.

    16:15-16:29

And if you don't give because you're afraid to lose it, you're saying, "I'm willing to forfeit the gain that God would have returned to me." So again, you're going to fall into one of two camps when it comes to your money.

    16:30-16:47

you're going to say, "Well, if I give it, I won't have it." Or, you're going to say, "If I give it, I'll get more later." And the level of your faith determines which of those camps you're going to be in.

    16:48-16:55

But the principle of sowing and reaping - you see, the Lord says it's true with agriculture, and it's true with your wallet.

    16:55-16:56

    It's true with your purse.

    16:59-17:00

If you sow a little, you're going to reap a little.

    17:00-17:02

If you sow a lot, you're going to reap a lot.

    17:04-17:05

    So that's the principle.

    17:05-17:06

    Number two, the practice.

    17:07-17:08

    Look at verse 7.

    17:09-17:15

Paul says, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart." Do you notice that keeps coming up?

    17:17-17:28

"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Again, this is free will giving.

    17:30-17:32

I don't know what anyone in this church gives.

    17:32-17:34

I don't want to know what anyone in this church gives.

    17:35-17:37

This is between you and God.

    17:38-17:40

You determine this in your hearts.

    17:41-17:45

See, giving biblically shouldn't be done impulsively.

    17:46-17:47

    It shouldn't be.

    17:47-17:53

You shouldn't say, well, I'll wait until the offering bags come by in church, and then I'll kind of make a snap judgment on how much I want to give.

    17:54-17:55

    It shouldn't be impulsive.

    17:55-17:56

    It should be voluntary.

    17:57-17:59

But notice here, it should be predetermined.

    18:00-18:01

    Do you see that?

    18:01-18:02

You have to decide in your heart.

    18:03-18:06

You should prayerfully think about how much you want to give to the church.

    18:06-18:08

How much you want to give to missions.

    18:08-18:10

You should prayerfully think about that.

    18:10-18:14

You should be talking, married people, you should be talking to your husband or wife about that.

    18:15-18:20

How much do you think we should give for this ministry to advance the Kingdom of God?

    18:21-18:22

    Prayerful thoughts.

    18:24-18:33

notice in verse 7 there are two negatives. He says, first of all, not reluctantly. Not reluctantly. Literally. Not regretfully.

    18:35-18:56

You shouldn't give regretfully. You shouldn't be like, you know what, I hear what Pastor Jeff is saying, and next week I'm going to give a lot. Sowing and reaping baby, I'm going to give a lot. And you come and you're like, God, I'm going to give this to you. And then you give and then it's sermon time and then When you're in the car driving home, and you're like, "Oh, what have I done?

    18:57-19:00

Why did I give all that money to the church?

    19:00-19:02

    I shouldn't have done that!

    19:02-19:16

That was stupid of me!" Regretfully, if you are going to regret what you give to the Lord, you shouldn't give it to the Lord.

    19:17-19:18

    It's not worshipful.

    19:19-19:20

    That is not worship.

    19:22-19:27

To say I'm going to give this to you, God, but I wish that I didn't have to.

    19:27-19:30

I wish that I didn't have to give you anything.

    19:30-19:32

I wish I could just feel better about giving you less.

    19:33-19:37

If that's the attitude, you completely misunderstood what it means to give worshipfully.

    19:38-19:47

That's why Paul says, "not reluctantly." And then he says, "not under compulsion." See, reluctance is like the internal thing.

    19:48-19:51

You're under compulsion is the external thing, meaning peer pressure.

    19:52-19:58

Or maybe somebody gives bad teaching about giving, like the knucklehead on the Christian channel that I mentioned.

    19:58-20:04

And maybe you've heard some bad teaching, and you feel this guilt trip, and you feel like you're under compulsion.

    20:04-20:08

Like if I don't give, God's going to burn my house down.

    20:09-20:12

Or God's going to take stuff from me because I haven't given.

    20:16-20:17

    under compulsion.

    20:19-20:21

You see that? It's right there in the text.

    20:21-20:22

    Don't give reluctantly.

    20:23-20:24

    Don't give under compulsion.

    20:26-20:27

    Look at this last phrase.

    20:27-20:41

"For God loves a cheerful giver." This word "cheerful" in the Greek is where we get the English word "hilarious." God loves a hilarious giver.

    20:45-20:48

It's the kind of giver that God gets fired up about.

    20:48-20:49

    A hilarious giver.

    20:51-20:57

You're like, "What does that mean?" When I think of hilarious giver, Aaron and I have these friends, and they visit here from time to time.

    20:57-21:07

They don't know Kurt and Pam aren't here today, or they're like, "Okay, I'm going to talk about them because they're not here." We have these friends named Kurt and Pam, and don't tell them I said this, okay, because it would embarrass them.

    21:09-21:11

    They are hilarious givers.

    21:13-21:16

Kurt owned a auto glass place up north.

    21:17-21:24

And years back, remember the Jeep, the driver's side window, one day I went to roll the window down, and instead of like,

    21:24-21:25

    [HONKING]

    21:25-21:28

I hit the button, and it was like, Carl, thunk.

    21:28-21:32

The whole pane of glass went into the door, and one fell, thunk.

    21:34-21:36

And Aaron and I were like, oh, man.

    21:36-21:38

So I took it there, because I'm friends with Kurt.

    21:38-21:44

And I said, hey, I know you usually deal with brakes and stuff, but could you take a look at this?

    21:44-21:47

And he says, yeah, I'll take a look at it.

    21:48-21:52

I went to pick it up a few days later.

    21:52-21:54

He said, yeah, why don't you-- he just called.

    21:54-21:55

He said, why don't you stop by?

    21:55-21:56

I'd like to explain to you what happened.

    21:57-22:00

So I stopped by and went into his place.

    22:00-22:03

And Kurt had all the internal pieces and the door laid out.

    22:03-22:07

He goes, these are parts of the motor that work the window.

    22:07-22:08

And I want you to see something.

    22:08-23:13

This part of the window here, it gets kind of complicated but this part broke and when that breaks it's it's a lot of work and it's usually pretty expensive to get this stuff replaced and I'm not sure I know it's an older vehicle that you have and I wasn't sure I wasn't sure what you wanted to do but it can be pretty expensive and I'm looking at this I'm like we didn't have a lot of money at the moment and I'm just like well driving around with your without a window in Pennsylvania isn't an option but we just didn't have the money." Well the whole time he's explaining this to me, his wife is standing beside him. She is ready to explode. She's like, she's on the inside of this joke. She's just sitting there like, and I keep looking at her and she's like, she's like trying so hard not to laugh. She's like, and so anyways, I'm like, you know, black cloud of doom. I'm just like, oh man. I said, well "Kurt, thank you so much." I said, "What do you think I should do?" Then finally, Pam goes, "We fixed it!"

    23:13-23:14

    (laughing)

    23:14-23:16

    And she starts laughing.

    23:16-23:17

    And then Kurt starts laughing.

    23:18-23:26

And I'm like, "Oh, you fixed it." I'm like, "Well, what are you?" And they're like, "Nothing!" And they start laughing hysterically.

    23:26-23:30

Like, they got me with the world's greatest practical joke.

    23:30-23:34

But you see, They love giving so much.

    23:34-23:39

And I've seen them over the years with missions and missionaries and outreach things.

    23:41-23:45

Anytime I talk to them about giving, they light up.

    23:45-23:46

    They're like, "We love!

    23:47-23:50

We love to give!" And they're not giving trillions of dollars.

    23:50-23:52

It's just they're giving according to what they have.

    23:54-23:55

    But so joyfully.

    23:56-23:59

So when I think of hilarious giver, I think of my friends Kurt and Pam.

    23:59-24:00

    It's hilarious to them.

    24:01-24:07

They think it's the greatest thing in the world to be able to give to help somebody, to be able to give for ministry.

    24:07-24:08

    They think it's hilarious.

    24:10-24:12

This is exactly what God's talking about.

    24:15-24:17

    God loves a cheerful giver.

    24:17-24:18

And you're like, "Well, hang on a second here.

    24:20-24:22

What does it mean that God loves a cheerful giver?

    24:22-24:23

Because I'm not quite there yet.

    24:23-24:30

Does that mean that God doesn't love me?" Well, the Bible says that God loves the world, right?

    24:30-24:33

The Bible says God loves His people.

    24:35-24:42

What this verse is saying is there is something special about the affection that God has for people that give joyfully.

    24:44-24:53

This is the only verse like this in the Bible by the way, where it singles out a certain demographic that God has a special affection for like this.

    24:53-24:54

This is the only verse that says this.

    24:57-25:04

God has a special affection for people that give, like Paul's talking about here.

    25:05-25:08

To illustrate, I don't want you to get tripped up on this phrase.

    25:08-25:09

What does it mean God loves a cheerful giver?

    25:10-25:11

I'm not cheerful. God doesn't love me.

    25:11-25:13

That's not what that means at all.

    25:13-25:14

I want you to think about it this way.

    25:17-25:23

If you brought a friend to me and you said this friend of mine, this friend of mine works with special needs kids.

    25:24-25:47

And I've had this conversation with some of you that field. What have I said? I love people that work with special needs kids. You heard me say that? I love people that work with special needs kids. Does that mean I don't love you if you don't work with special needs kids? Like do you work with special? Well no, I don't work with special needs kids. I work down at the mill. Well I don't love you as much as I love those other people. Of course it doesn't mean that.

    25:48-26:13

I love you all. But you understand for me, because of having kids with some developmental issues of my own. Because of that, I have a special place in my heart for people that would voluntarily work with special needs kids. I love people that do that. Not exclusively, but there's something different. Does that make sense?

    26:13-26:15

There's something different in my heart about that.

    26:17-26:47

So understand God. What's God's favorite thing to do? Give. Right? For God so loved the world that He what? He gave. God loves to give. He gave His Son and He gives us His Holy Spirit. He gives us blessing on top of blessing. Giving lavishly and joyfully is God's favorite thing. So when one of us, by faith, gets it and says, "I love to give too. I love to give the way God loves to give." God says, "I love people like that.

    26:48-26:55

I love people that get it." In the same way that I would say, "I love people that work with special needs kids." There's something special there.

    26:55-26:57

You can't deny it from God's Word.

    26:57-27:02

He has a special place in His heart for people.

    27:03-27:05

    To put giving into practice.

    27:06-27:09

    God loves a cheerful giver.

    27:11-27:12

That's the principle in the practice.

    27:12-27:15

    Look at verse 8.

    27:16-27:35

"And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work." This is one of the most over-the-top verses in the Bible.

    27:35-27:36

    Do you notice?

    27:37-27:46

Five times in this one verse, He uses "all" and "every." I think it's four "alls" and one "every." So over the top.

    27:46-27:48

Paul didn't say, "Well, you know what?

    27:48-28:01

If you give to God, if you're willing to give to God, then maybe God might possibly take care of you too." There's no "might, maybe, or possibly" in here.

    28:03-28:07

He says, "Listen, this is a promise that you can take to the bank.

    28:08-28:24

God is able to make all grace abound to you so that having all sufficiency - like sufficiency in what?

    28:26-28:27

    In all things.

    28:28-28:29

    When does that happen?

    28:29-28:36

At all times, You may abound in every good work.

    28:38-28:43

I love that first phrase, "God is able." As I mentioned before, I promise we get back to this.

    28:44-28:45

God is able. This is a faith issue.

    28:46-28:47

    This is a faith issue.

    28:47-28:49

    Money is a faith issue.

    28:49-28:50

    Giving is a faith issue.

    28:51-28:56

You know, your Bible is full of promises that by God's grace we have embraced.

    28:57-29:03

God has promised that those who believe Jesus Christ have the promise of eternal life.

    29:05-29:09

On the cross, God has promised that our sins are forgiven.

    29:09-29:14

Through the resurrection, God has promised that we too will have a resurrection.

    29:17-29:20

God has promised His Holy Spirit to everyone who believes in Him.

    29:20-29:22

God has promised to hear and answer our prayers.

    29:23-29:32

There are promises attached to applying God's Word, whether it's in a marriage or in your parenting to your co-workers, or to people that hate you.

    29:35-29:38

Everything in the Christian life is by faith.

    29:39-29:39

    Everything.

    29:41-29:55

See, the thing is, when we get to talking about money, this is a more, I guess you could say, concrete or visible thing than, for example, prayer.

    29:56-29:57

Here's what I mean by that.

    29:59-30:01

I believe that God answers every prayer.

    30:05-30:07

Sometimes we don't know right away how He's going to answer it.

    30:11-30:14

But I believe He hears every prayer and He answers accordingly.

    30:15-30:17

But that's something that's hard to quantify.

    30:19-30:20

Like is God answering my prayer?

    30:20-30:25

Well, I think that He is, or maybe the answer's coming tomorrow.

    30:25-30:30

I know an answer's coming, but I'm not quite sure exactly what God's doing.

    30:30-30:34

Do you see there's a little bit of a mystery when it comes to prayer?

    30:35-30:37

But money's a little bit different.

    30:38-30:40

Because the promise is very concrete.

    30:41-30:52

To say, "You give it out, and God says I'm going to give it back more than you gave out." That's something that you can put on the sheet.

    30:52-30:52

    Right, Ken?

    30:53-30:54

You put that on your credits and debits.

    30:55-30:55

    Right?

    30:56-30:58

And that's what makes - you understand what I mean?

    30:58-30:59

That's what makes it a little bit different than prayer.

    31:00-31:06

Because you can objectively and clinically evaluate this.

    31:07-31:12

I gave to God, trusting that He was going to give back to me.

    31:13-31:17

So here's how much I gave, and here's how much God returned to me.

    31:18-31:19

And that's why this takes so much faith.

    31:22-31:27

This is a real chance to apply.

    31:28-31:31

Whether you really believe what God's Word says.

    31:32-31:38

You know, we're going to give you an opportunity to really evaluate for yourself if you really believe this.

    31:40-31:51

Through Harvest Bible Fellowship, they are building a training center for pastors over in Romania so they can train pastors to plant churches all over Europe.

    31:52-31:55

It's going to be like the one that I attended in Chicago.

    31:56-32:03

But obviously it'd be a lot easier to train people over there than shipping everybody from Romania over to Chicago for trainings.

    32:04-32:10

So the fellowship has reached out to us to ask if we can partner in getting this training center going.

    32:10-32:12

And you're going to be hearing more about that.

    32:12-32:16

One of our elders next week is going to get up and speak a little more about this opportunity.

    32:17-32:27

I'm just giving you the heads up, because this is going to be an opportunity for you to evaluate whether you really believe God's Word is true.

    32:27-32:36

Do you believe that if you by faith give to get this ministry going, do you believe that God's going to return it back to you?

    32:36-32:37

    Do you believe that?

    32:38-32:40

    Because that's what it says.

    32:41-32:43

It's pretty clear that's what it says.

    32:45-32:48

But you're going to get to see whether you really believe what it says.

    32:51-32:53

There's more information on that coming.

    32:55-33:05

Because at the end of the day, like every other promise of God, we're either going to trust Him, or we're going to choose not to trust Him.

    33:07-33:10

That's why I have no problem saying, you know, I'm not going to coerce you.

    33:10-33:13

I could get up and give you some impassioned speech.

    33:14-33:20

We could play sad music, I can tell you about the poor people in Romania that I've seen when I was over there.

    33:20-33:28

I can tell you my time over there about all the orphans living in the sewers.

    33:29-33:29

    True.

    33:31-33:36

And I can kind of guilt you and kind of twist your arm a little bit to give.

    33:38-33:42

But understand, that would be a disservice to you if I did that.

    33:42-33:47

Because now you're not giving with a cheerful heart.

    33:47-33:48

    You're not giving voluntarily.

    33:49-33:52

You're not giving as an act of worship.

    33:52-33:57

You're giving because Jeff said that you should.

    33:59-34:01

And Jeff's going to make me feel guilty if I don't.

    34:01-34:04

And that's why I don't want to coerce you.

    34:06-34:06

    Between you and God.

    34:07-34:08

    So should I inform you?

    34:09-34:10

    Should I make a plea?

    34:10-34:10

    Yes.

    34:11-34:13

Should I send you down a guilt trip if you don't give?

    34:14-34:14

    Absolutely not.

    34:15-34:19

Because when you give by faith, you're going to get a chance to experience the truth that God laid out here.

    34:20-34:22

You're going to get a chance to experience that.

    34:22-34:25

If you give by faith, you're going to be looking back and saying, you know what?

    34:26-34:28

I have found God's Word to be true.

    34:30-34:31

    Number four, the precedent.

    34:33-34:34

    The precedent.

    34:34-34:35

    Look at v. 9.

    34:36-34:41

Paul says, "As it is written, He has distributed freely.

    34:41-34:47

He has given to the poor His righteousness endures forever.

    34:49-34:52

When I first read that, I thought, well, he's talking about God, right?

    34:52-34:53

    He's not.

    34:53-34:54

I want you to turn really quick.

    34:55-34:56

    Turn back to Psalm 112.

    34:57-34:57

I want you to see this.

    34:57-35:01

I know we don't often flip pages in our Bible.

    35:01-35:02

We try to stay in one passage.

    35:02-35:04

But I want you to see this, ok?

    35:04-35:07

He's not talking about God there.

    35:07-35:12

God is not the "He." And then you're like, well, who's the he?

    35:14-35:16

And the good thing is the he can be you.

    35:17-35:18

    Look at Psalm 112.

    35:18-35:19

    Look at verse 1.

    35:19-35:21

    It says, "Praise the Lord.

    35:21-35:26

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments.

    35:27-35:31

His offspring will be mighty in the land." Now, it's obvious, who's he talking about?

    35:31-35:33

He's talking about somebody that fears the Lord.

    35:33-35:36

He's talking about somebody that loves God.

    35:37-35:37

    Okay?

    35:38-35:39

Now, go down to verse 5.

    35:39-35:48

It says, "It is well with the man who deals generously and lends, who conducts his affairs with justice." Jump down to verse 9.

    35:49-35:55

"He is distributed freely, he is given to the poor, his righteousness endures forever." Does that sound familiar?

    35:56-35:59

That's the verse that Paul was quoting in 2 Corinthians 9.

    36:00-36:04

He's talking about a person who fears the Lord.

    36:05-36:05

    Paul's reminding him.

    36:06-36:07

Do you know what Psalm 112 says?

    36:10-36:11

    Why is he reminding them?

    36:11-36:12

    Because there's a precedent here.

    36:12-36:13

    Paul's saying this isn't a new thing.

    36:13-36:15

This isn't just an Old Testament concept.

    36:15-36:17

    God always works this way.

    36:19-36:21

He says God always works this way.

    36:21-36:26

No one has ever truly given to the Lord and regretted it.

    36:28-36:30

I've heard a lot of testimonies when it comes to giving.

    36:30-36:32

I've heard a ton of testimonies over the years.

    36:34-36:40

You know, I've never, ever, ever, not one time, have I ever heard a negative testimony when it came to giving.

    36:40-36:41

    I've never heard it.

    36:42-36:44

I've never heard somebody say, "You know what, Pastor Jeff?

    36:46-36:48

I tried to do what the Bible said I gave, and you know what happened?

    36:48-36:49

    I ran out.

    36:49-36:52

I didn't have money for groceries next month because I gave to that missionary.

    36:52-36:55

I ran out." I have never heard that.

    36:55-36:57

I've never heard somebody say, "You know what?

    36:57-36:58

    I gave to that ministry.

    36:58-36:59

    What a waste.

    37:00-37:03

What a stupid decision that was." I've never heard that.

    37:04-37:13

I've never heard somebody say, you know what, I really felt like God wanted me to give to this ministry so I gave, and I felt so unfulfilled afterwards.

    37:14-37:15

    I felt so unfulfilled.

    37:15-37:20

I felt this emptiness in my heart like, wow, maybe I didn't hear God correctly.

    37:20-37:22

I've never heard any of that stuff.

    37:25-37:29

I could fill books with the testimonies that I've heard the opposite.

    37:30-37:35

Oh, you know what, pastors, I was so excited that I gave that ministry and to see what happened.

    37:35-37:37

To see how people were coming to Christ.

    37:38-37:42

It thrilled me to death to hear the update about that ministry that I gave to.

    37:42-37:44

It was just so exciting for me.

    37:44-37:45

    And I'm so glad.

    37:45-37:47

I wish I could have given more.

    37:49-38:01

How fired up were you when we raised money last February for Moldova and then we sent Darla over and we saw those before pictures of the crumbling house and then we had these after pictures of a restored house.

    38:02-38:04

The people that gave were ecstatic.

    38:05-38:10

They said, look, I was able to affect the kingdom on the other side of the world.

    38:10-38:11

And I didn't even have to go.

    38:12-38:15

And that was such a privilege to be able to give.

    38:17-38:19

Paul's like, yeah, that's kind of how it always is.

    38:19-38:20

That's how it was in the Old Testament.

    38:23-38:24

    That's how it is today.

    38:25-38:26

    What a beautiful promise.

    38:26-38:27

    Do you see that there?

    38:27-38:34

He says, "His righteousness endures forever." I spent a lot of time talking about that phrase, but here's what that boils down to.

    38:35-38:37

What he's saying is God never forgets.

    38:38-38:39

    God never forgets.

    38:40-38:49

When you give generously to the Lord, and God uses what you give to advance His kingdom, God never forgets.

    38:49-38:54

God always has that look towards you to say, "That guy's generous.

    38:55-38:56

    That guy gets it.

    38:56-38:59

That guy used what I entrusted to him.

    39:01-39:01

    He never forgets.

    39:03-39:04

    That's the precedent.

    39:04-39:05

    And then finally, the provision.

    39:07-39:08

The provision - look at verse 10.

    39:09-39:24

It says, "He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness." The provision.

    39:24-39:26

Do you notice verse 8 says He is able?

    39:27-39:29

    Verse 10 says He does.

    39:29-39:30

    Do you see that?

    39:31-39:31

    He keeps the promise.

    39:32-39:32

    He's able.

    39:33-39:35

    Verse 10, He does.

    39:37-39:41

God can do it, and God does do it.

    39:44-39:48

God has the power to back up the promises.

    39:52-39:55

God has the power to back up the promises.

    39:55-39:58

We had a saying - it was a little crude.

    39:58-40:00

I'll give you the nicer version.

    40:00-40:00

    I had this saying.

    40:01-40:01

    Maybe you've heard it.

    40:02-40:04

Don't be writing checks with your mouth.

    40:04-40:05

    Have you heard this?

    40:05-40:08

Don't be writing checks with your mouth that your backside can't cash.

    40:08-40:09

    Have you heard that?

    40:10-40:14

What that means is, don't be saying something up here that you can't deliver.

    40:15-40:16

    He's saying that's not God.

    40:16-40:21

When God says something, He has the power to see it through.

    40:21-40:23

And He does see it through.

    40:24-40:26

It's been happening that way since creation.

    40:27-40:32

and said, "He supplies seeds to the sower." This blew my mind.

    40:32-40:33

    Maybe it will yours.

    40:36-40:39

Do you understand that they're not making any new seeds?

    40:39-40:40

    Did you know that?

    40:41-40:49

The seeds that God created at creation have been multiplying through generations up until our day.

    40:49-40:56

There's not some factory in Cleveland where people are assembling seeds with little tiny seed assembly tools.

    40:57-41:03

you know, "Oh, you know what? Let's make a new kind of tree and we'll build a seed that'll make..." We can't make a seed.

    41:04-41:08

All the seeds that we have come from the ones that God's already created.

    41:11-41:13

That's Paul's point here. God has this track record.

    41:16-41:18

But you can't miss this. Please don't miss this.

    41:18-41:21

I know we're coming down to the home stretch here.

    41:22-41:26

But if you miss this, it's going to cause you a lot of problems.

    41:27-41:29

The question is why does God provide more?

    41:29-41:36

All through this we've seen that we sow a little, we reap a little, we sow more, we reap more.

    41:36-41:39

God gives us more proportionately to what we sow.

    41:40-41:41

So why does God provide more?

    41:42-41:43

    You have to see this.

    41:43-41:54

At the end of verse 8, He says, "You may abound in every good work." God's going to make sure you have everything that you need for what?

    41:54-41:56

That you may abound in every good work.

    41:57-41:58

And then look at verse 10 again.

    41:59-42:11

He says that God will supply and multiply your seed look at the next two words - for sowing.

    42:12-42:14

So why does God provide more?

    42:17-42:20

God provides more so that you give more.

    42:23-42:24

    Understand that.

    42:24-42:26

Like, I need a new car.

    42:28-42:28

    Bad example.

    42:30-42:45

I need a new something, so I'm going to show up at the church and give this big one-time gift so I can cash in on God giving me one proportionately big one-time gift, and then I can buy my new whatever.

    42:47-42:48

    That's not it at all.

    42:51-42:55

God gives you more so that you give more.

    42:57-43:04

You see, when God keeps shoveling it back to you, He wants you to use that to continue to meet more needs and to advance His Kingdom even more.

    43:05-43:11

In other words, I wrote this saying down, God gives you more to meet a need, not to feed your greed.

    43:12-43:13

    Understand that.

    43:14-43:17

God's not like, well, they're really generous and they're greedy.

    43:18-43:20

I can use both of those things.

    43:20-43:22

    It's not about your greed.

    43:22-43:26

God's not trying to feed some sinful, greedy inclination of yours.

    43:26-43:31

God wants you to continue to give out what He's entrusting you with.

    43:31-43:33

In other words, God's looking down from heaven saying look at her.

    43:34-43:35

    She keeps giving it away.

    43:35-43:39

The more stuff I send her way, she loves people and she cares about people.

    43:40-43:41

    She gets it.

    43:41-43:42

    She's faithful with money.

    43:42-43:43

    Send more her way.

    43:43-43:46

God's like just keep shuffling it her way.

    43:46-43:57

Because it seems like the more we give her, the more she's distributing it When we meet needs, God says that's the person I want to keep sending stuff to.

    43:59-44:05

As our worship team comes up, we say I love to give because God loves to give.

    44:08-44:19

And not only does God love to give, God has a special affection for His children who get it, for His children who practice it.

    44:22-44:28

Father in Heaven, we realize there's been a lot of bad teaching concerning giving.

    44:30-44:36

There's so many people that would make others poor just so they could lie in their pockets.

    44:37-44:44

There's so many people who teach wrongly that You want to just satisfy us with stuff.

    44:44-44:49

So we should give so that You just give us more stuff that we can put in our garage.

    44:51-44:53

He wants us to be satisfied in You.

    44:55-44:57

He wants us to find our fulfillment in You.

    44:59-45:08

And You give to us so that we can use the stuff of the earth to fulfill Your purposes.

    45:12-45:15

God, I pray for a maturing for all of us.

    45:16-45:23

And I pray, God, that for some here, this would be a time of testing of their faith.

    45:25-45:30

Your Word says that when we hand over to You, You give us back even more than we give.

    45:32-45:35

And the more that we're willing to do that, the more that You're willing to give to us.

    45:36-45:51

And God, if there's someone here right now who says, "I'm just not sure if that's true," I pray by the power of Your Spirit that You would have them step out in faith because God, I know You will prove Yourself faithful to Your Word.

    45:53-46:01

As we gather around Your table, Father, we're always reminded that this is the motivation.

    46:03-46:06

We give because You're a giver.

    46:07-46:16

We give because as You're conforming us to the image of Your Son, we're reminded that Your Son gave all.

    46:17-46:28

He willingly came to this earth to humble Himself to the point of death, even death on a cross, so that He might give us eternal life.

    46:30-46:33

Father, we thank You for Your Word.

    46:33-46:37

We praise You for how clear Your Word is.

    46:37-46:44

And I pray that we would not just be hearers, but that we would be doers.

    46:47-46:58

And that we would believe the promise of Jesus when He said, "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-10

  1. How do people misapply this teaching? (think of the TV preachers!) What does the Bible actually teach about sowing and reaping when it comes to giving?

  2. Why does Paul quote Psalm 112:9 in 2 Corinthians 9:9?

  3. Explain "God loves a cheerful giver". What does that mean? Why does God give more to cheerful givers (hint: verses 8 and 10)?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another! Specifically to grow in generosity that trusts God to keep His Word about giving.

Because Jesus Loves to Give

When We Give Like Jesus:

We give SELFLESSLY. (2 Cor 8:9)

We FINISH what we start. (2 Cor 8:10-12)

EVERYONE is taken care of. (2 Cor 8:13-15)

    I love to give.

    00:09-00:14

Now, here's the thing, the title of the sermon series is I love to give.

    00:14-00:17

And we are so moving past that.

    00:17-00:27

We are so moving past, yeah, offering is part of the church and I should probably give and I'm gonna feel guilty if I don't.

    00:27-00:30

and that is not where we are going at all.

    00:30-00:37

We are moving to the biblical view of giving, which says, I love to give.

    00:37-00:39

So let me hear you say it like that.

    00:40-00:41

    I love to give.

    00:42-00:48

There we go, we're getting, we'll work on the who's too, but we're getting somewhere.

    00:49-00:50

    We love to give.

    00:51-00:54

And as I promised, no guilt trip here.

    00:55-01:00

You're not going to have people, shaking the offering bag in front of you, right?

    01:00-01:04

Like, you know, there's no guilt here.

    01:05-01:09

    Okay, and this is freeing.

    01:11-01:13

And I hope that you find that in this series.

    01:15-01:21

This isn't meant to be some obligatory liturgical act that we do.

    01:21-01:29

This is freeing that we give unto the Lord because we love to give.

    01:30-01:33

And that's what 2 Corinthians 8 and 9 are all about.

    01:35-01:46

So, just to give you the context, if you weren't with us last week, in this passage, the churches were rallying around taking this offering for the poor churches in Jerusalem.

    01:47-01:51

Okay, there was a lot of persecution back in this day.

    01:51-02:09

You know, Jews who had come to Christ now were being persecuted, losing their jobs, losing their businesses, and the church was growing very quickly, but it was growing with suddenly very poor people, and the churches, the other churches were rallying around, saying, "Let's take an offering.

    02:09-02:18

"Let's support these poor Christians in Jerusalem." And 1 Corinthians chapter 16, the first four verses, Paul talks about that.

    02:18-02:25

And when we get to this passage that we're looking at, Paul is teaching about giving, And he's using the Macedonians as an example.

    02:25-02:27

    You're like, who's the Macedonians?

    02:27-02:33

Well, that was the church in Berea, the church at Philippi, and the church at Thessalonica.

    02:33-02:36

Those would have been the Macedonian churches.

    02:37-02:41

And Paul's lifting them up as a highlight to say, look at how they gave.

    02:42-02:44

You know, these guys understand giving.

    02:44-02:50

They understand what it means to love to give, and here's why they love to give.

    02:51-02:53

And we saw that last week.

    02:53-02:55

    Were the Macedonian churches rich?

    02:56-02:58

    No, they were poor.

    02:59-03:03

These were poor churches themselves, but they had something to give.

    03:04-03:10

And they wanted to give it, because giving is worship.

    03:11-03:15

And understand all of those principles apply to us.

    03:16-03:20

I don't know what anyone in this church gives outside of my own family.

    03:21-03:26

I don't know what anybody in this church makes outside of the people that are employed by this church.

    03:29-03:31

But we all fall under those principles, right?

    03:31-03:33

Do you have something to give?

    03:34-03:34

    Do you have something?

    03:35-03:38

I go, Pastor Jeff, I only make $5 a year.

    03:39-03:40

    But you still have something.

    03:42-03:43

The question is, do you wanna give?

    03:45-03:48

See, giving is a hard issue, it always has been, even in the Old Testament.

    03:49-03:50

    Giving's a hard issue.

    03:52-03:53

Well, I don't know if I want to give it.

    03:53-03:56

Well, you have to come to that place where you understand that giving is worship.

    03:57-03:58

It is an act of worship.

    04:00-04:02

And we talked about that last week.

    04:02-04:04

How much of what you own actually belongs to you?

    04:05-04:05

    Right?

    04:06-04:07

Remember, we said that nothing is mine.

    04:08-04:14

You're taking with you out of this world exactly the same amount of stuff that you brought into the world.

    04:14-04:15

    Nothing is mine.

    04:15-04:16

    It's all God's.

    04:17-04:24

allowing a certain amount of stuff to pass through our hands to use for his glory.

    04:26-04:28

We can take a page out of the Macedonian's book.

    04:30-04:34

To turn to verse 8 here, this is where we left off last week.

    04:35-04:46

Notice Paul says, "I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine.

    04:48-04:50

Here again, Paul is making this point over and over.

    04:50-04:52

    This is not a command.

    04:53-05:03

And there are some people that teach that unless you're tithing, unless you're giving 10% of your gross, unless you're doing that, then you're in sin.

    05:04-05:07

And this is the set amount, and you have to be doing it this way.

    05:08-05:11

And they try to make giving this legalistic thing.

    05:12-05:16

Notice Paul says, "No, this isn't a command." Giving is to be done free will.

    05:16-05:21

It's to come from a heart that loves the Lord and is worshiping over and over.

    05:22-05:23

    Give of your own accord.

    05:23-05:26

Give according to what you have, and it's gonna come up again in this passage.

    05:26-05:36

He's making the point, but notice the first thing, he says, "I say this not as a command." You see, if New Testament giving was commanded, this would certainly be the place that Paul set it, right?

    05:37-05:41

Don't forget, the Lord expects you to give X percent of your income.

    05:41-05:44

He says, I say this not as a command.

    05:45-05:49

I don't know what any other church you may have been to, been a member of, visited.

    05:49-05:53

I don't know what they might have told you, but look at what your Bible says.

    05:53-05:56

You know, we are not the mob, OK?

    05:56-06:00

You're not going to have, you know, people in our church standing outside the door.

    06:00-06:01

    How much did you give?

    06:01-06:05

You know, shaking you down, breaking your thumbs if you didn't give enough.

    06:05-06:06

That's that's not New Testament giving.

    06:07-06:08

That is not New Testament giving.

    06:10-06:12

He says, show that you too have an authentic love for God.

    06:15-06:30

And for these poor saints, so as we move on in the passage, you know, Paul, where am I going to find an example of passionate, fired up, authentic love that gives joyfully and give sacrificially?

    06:30-06:31

Can you think of an example?

    06:32-06:33

    Look at verse nine.

    06:33-06:36

This is one of the most beautiful verses in the entire New Testament.

    06:37-06:49

He says, for, you know, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake, he became poor so that you, by his poverty.

    06:51-06:52

    Might become rich.

    06:54-06:58

The church, this is the motivation to give and as great as the Macedonians were.

    07:01-07:03

    The ultimate example of giving.

    07:04-07:07

is right here in Jesus Christ, because his whole life.

    07:09-07:09

    Was about giving.

    07:11-07:20

Jesus even said, I didn't come to to be served, I came to what I came to serve, he came to to give everything and.

    07:21-07:23

The question is, how can we emulate?

    07:24-07:32

You know, right in the middle of this passage about giving all suddenly talks about Jesus Christ, how can we emulate the giving of Jesus Christ?

    07:32-07:35

We'll jot this down on your outline.

    07:36-07:39

When we give like Jesus, first of all, we give selflessly.

    07:41-07:44

When we give like Jesus, we give selflessly.

    07:46-07:50

Again, this is so important to read the Bible, understanding the context.

    07:51-07:58

You know, this is a beautiful verse, and we can do a whole sermon series just on this one verse about the person of Jesus.

    07:59-08:03

But this verse is in the middle of a passage about giving.

    08:05-08:13

And sometimes when we talk about giving, people immediately want to transport to, well, I give my talent to the church and I give my my time to the church, and those things are fantastic.

    08:16-08:20

But we can't neglect the fact that part of your giving is giving financially.

    08:21-08:26

And that's the context of this passage is giving financially right in the middle of this.

    08:28-08:29

    Paul shares the gospel.

    08:31-08:33

This is the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    08:33-08:35

First of all, notice it says.

    08:36-08:42

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, what's he talking about?

    08:42-08:47

Though he was rich, he's talking about the fact that Jesus is God.

    08:48-08:52

He's talking about the fact that Jesus has an eternal glory.

    08:55-08:57

And we talked about this over Christmas, didn't we?

    08:57-09:03

Remember John 1 and verse 14 says that the word God became flesh.

    09:05-09:07

That Jesus wasn't some afterthought of God's.

    09:07-09:18

God wasn't in heaven like, "Well, the law thing isn't working out, so I guess I'll send my son, and he created this being who was going to represent him." Jesus wasn't some afterthought.

    09:20-09:25

Jesus is eternal God, and he makes that claim over and over and over.

    09:25-09:31

of my favorite examples. I write down John chapter 8 verses 57 through 58.

    09:32-09:43

Jesus was in the middle of a confrontation with certain Jews and Abraham came up and Jesus said Abraham I was glad to see my day.

    09:44-09:50

They were kind of mocking him. They're like you're not even 50 years old and you've seen Abraham?

    09:51-10:03

And Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, before Abraham was, "I am." We just say, "I am." What does that phrase even mean?

    10:03-10:04

That was a claim to be God.

    10:05-10:11

Jesus was saying, "I'm God." I was there in Abraham's day because I'm God.

    10:11-10:15

I was there long before Abraham because I am God.

    10:18-10:20

I've had people want to dispute that verse with me.

    10:20-10:30

They were like, "Well, that's not what Jesus meant." And my response is, "Well, that's how the people took it "because the next verse is they tried to kill him." They knew exactly what he was saying.

    10:30-10:32

He was claiming to be God.

    10:33-10:40

So when 2 Corinthians 8, 9 says he was rich, that's what he's talking about.

    10:41-10:43

    How rich is God?

    10:44-10:50

God has a level of wealth that is incomprehensible because he can speak things into existence.

    10:51-10:53

    He literally owns everything.

    10:55-11:02

Every molecule, every atom in the physical world, the spiritual world, everything belongs to God.

    11:03-11:06

And Jesus Christ is God, and Paul is highlighting that here.

    11:06-11:09

Though he was rich, look at this next phrase.

    11:09-11:11

    This is so profound.

    11:12-11:14

I'd encourage you to meditate upon this this week.

    11:14-11:23

He says, "Yet for your sake, he became poor." It says that Jesus became poor.

    11:23-11:26

Now, he's not talking about money here.

    11:27-11:28

    Okay, was Jesus poor?

    11:28-11:38

Well, when he was on the earth, he wasn't exactly rich in the sense of he had the biggest house and the biggest entourage and the finest clothes.

    11:40-11:42

But Jesus wasn't really financially poor either.

    11:43-11:47

He had people supporting his ministry as this traveling preacher.

    11:48-11:49

    He's not talking about that.

    11:50-11:52

He's talking about the spiritual riches Jesus has as God.

    11:53-11:59

He's talking about how he became poor, referring to the incarnation.

    12:01-12:09

As I said, John 1:14, "The Word became flesh." Philippians 2.7, Dina earlier had read from Philippians 2.

    12:10-12:12

Going back a couple of verses from where she started.

    12:14-12:18

Paul says that Jesus made himself nothing.

    12:19-12:20

    That's the poverty.

    12:21-12:31

Though He's God, He willingly, Philippians 2:7, made Himself nothing.

    12:33-12:35

Can we even wrap our brains around the gap there?

    12:37-12:48

from Almighty, Eternal, Omniscient, Omnipresent, Omnipotent God taking the form of a man.

    12:51-12:53

Can we even grasp the gap?

    12:55-13:00

Holy Spirit in describing that says He made Himself nothing.

    13:01-13:02

    That's the poverty.

    13:04-13:21

I was thinking about that this week and last summer I was going into Walmart just up here in Cranberry on 19th and there was a guy sitting outside, you know, hungry, please help, had a little cardboard sign, he was sitting right outside the door.

    13:22-13:35

So I went up to him and I said, "What do you want to eat?" I said, "I'll go into McDonald's right now, I'll get you something to eat, what do you want?" And he goes, "Oh, thank you so much, man." He just had a guitar with him and really not much else.

    13:35-13:42

He goes, "Man, I really appreciate that." I went in and got him some food and I came out and gave it to him and sat down with him.

    13:43-13:45

And we talked for a little bit.

    13:45-13:48

He said that he kind of travels around.

    13:48-13:50

I asked how he came to be homeless.

    13:51-14:01

And he said, "Well, it was really a choice of mine." He goes, "I have places I could go, but this is just a choice." He kind of travels around and plays his guitar.

    14:01-14:02

I said, "Well, who do you play for?

    14:02-14:07

"Like, what kind of venue?" He goes, "I just kind of play myself, "and you know, in the woods or whatever.

    14:07-14:18

"I just do these little concerts for myself." And I said, "Do you know the story about Jesus?" And he's like, "Yeah, I think so." And I showed the gospel with him.

    14:19-14:26

And he goes, "Yeah, I've heard that before." And I said, "Well, what have you done with it?" We talked about Jesus for a little bit.

    14:27-14:34

And as we were talking, And I had a prayer with him and I said, well, you know what, I get to get going, but it was nice to talk to you.

    14:34-14:45

And I started to get up and this really kind, elderly gentleman walked by and he reached into it and pulled out some cash and handed it to me.

    14:47-14:49

Because I'm sitting with this guy.

    14:50-14:58

He hands it to me and I'm like, I'm like, not ready to respond to that.

    15:00-15:10

Because I almost said, oh, no, no, no, no, I'm not a beggar. But then I'm like, yeah, I'm like, would that offend this guy?

    15:11-15:14

Would it? Maybe it wouldn't. Maybe it wouldn't embarrass him, but maybe it would.

    15:16-15:26

I was just like, oh, no thank you, you know, I'll just give it to him, you know, I'm good. And this man didn't get it.

    15:26-15:30

He's like, "No, son, it's okay.

    15:31-15:35

"I want you to have it." And I just, I couldn't think.

    15:35-15:39

I mean, my brother is so much quicker on his feet than I am, and I so wished I was there at that point.

    15:39-15:50

I couldn't think of the intelligent thing to say, and because I didn't want to embarrass the guy that I've been trying to share the gospel with, and it's okay.

    15:51-15:55

And then right after that man walked by, another person walked by with a McDonald's bag.

    15:56-15:57

And he handed it to me.

    15:57-16:02

He goes, "I got you some hamburgers." There's no handbook.

    16:03-16:05

There wasn't a class in Bible college for this.

    16:05-16:16

I'm like, "I'm not hungry." And this guy's like, "Take the food." And I'm just like, "I'm good, thank." No, you know, it's okay.

    16:17-16:18

    I got this for you.

    16:18-16:21

I saw you guys come when I came in and I got this for you.

    16:22-16:26

Then I started thinking, you know, I was just about to leave, I think I'm going to stick around for a while.

    16:27-16:28

    [LAUGHTER]

    16:30-16:32

    I made $56 that day.

    16:32-16:34

No, I did not take a dime.

    16:37-16:39

But why did I tell you that story?

    16:41-16:44

It certainly wasn't to highlight any generosity on my part.

    16:44-16:46

I think I spent $3 on the guy.

    16:46-16:48

    That was nothing.

    16:48-16:54

And many other people walked by giving a couple of bucks here and there.

    16:55-16:59

And some people walk by with food and a couple bucks here and there.

    16:59-17:01

You know something that didn't happen?

    17:03-17:08

Nobody made themselves poor to help this guy.

    17:10-17:11

    Nobody did that.

    17:12-17:14

There was nobody that said, you know what?

    17:14-17:15

You know what I'm gonna do?

    17:15-17:38

Is I'm going to abandon my job, my house, everything that I have, everything that I've earned in my life, I'm going to abandon all that, and I'm going to go to your little concerts that you have in the woods, and I'm going to be poor like you, and I'm going to travel with you so that after a season of that, you can have everything that I have.

    17:39-17:49

You can come back to my house with me after we travel for a while, and after I'm poor with you, you can move in with me, and you can own everything that I own.

    17:49-17:53

Nobody did that except for God.

    17:54-17:56

    And that's the point here.

    17:58-18:10

Though he was rich, he became poor so that, what does he say, by his poverty, so that you by his poverty might become rich.

    18:11-18:13

Understand the magnitude of what Jesus Christ did.

    18:13-18:17

    He willingly emptied himself.

    18:17-18:22

He made himself nothing to come and live with a bunch of snakes like us.

    18:24-18:25

    To redeem us.

    18:28-18:38

To provide forgiveness of sin and eternal life through the cross, through the empty tomb. And he gave us the Bible says he gave us his riches.

    18:40-18:43

You see, it wasn't like God says, OK, you know what, you're forgiven.

    18:44-18:46

Don't ask me for anything else.

    18:46-18:47

That's what I say to my kids.

    18:47-18:50

Like I gave you this, okay, don't ask me for anything else right now.

    18:50-18:51

    And God wasn't like that.

    18:51-19:07

He says, I became poor so that you can become rich, so that you can become a possessor of everything that Jesus Christ has.

    19:09-19:10

    You understand that?

    19:10-19:12

You're like, what do you mean everything that Jesus has?

    19:13-19:15

Well, John 15, 11, just drop these references down.

    19:15-19:17

don't try to turn I'm going to say that very quickly.

    19:18-19:22

On 1511, Jesus says he gives us his joy.

    19:24-19:28

John 1427, Jesus gives us his peace.

    19:30-19:33

Colossians 3.4 Jesus gives us his life.

    19:34-19:39

First Corinthians one five tells us that we are enriched in every way.

    19:42-19:52

Ephesians 1 3 says that we have every spiritual blessing in Jesus Christ What does Jesus Christ have that he's holding back from you? What's the answer?

    19:53-20:17

Nothing. He gave you everything in him as found every Spiritual blessing that God could possibly offer you Everything If that wasn't enough Romans 8 17 tells us that we are joint heirs With Christ, can you even wrap your brain around what that means?

    20:18-21:39

Jesus didn't just forgive us of our sin then just give us some ticket to heaven Jesus says now you have everything that I have I'm giving it to you You're going to inherit everything that belongs to me. We're going to be joint heirs By his poverty he's made us rich Paul says this is how we're supposed to give Selflessly selflessly Understand that for Jesus coming to the earth Dying on the cross there wasn't a personal game for him There wasn't a self-seeking motivation there. His goal was to glorify his father And his motivation was because he loved you Because of his obedience the Bible says God gave him the name that is above all names But understand that when we talk about giving and we talk about selfless giving we have the example in Jesus Christ We said last week, remember, love always results in giving.

    21:39-21:40

    Remember we talked about that?

    21:40-21:46

When you think of your spouse or your boyfriend or girlfriend, when you love someone, you naturally want to give.

    21:47-21:54

Well, in Jesus Christ, we find the greatest love, and because he has the greatest love, it compels him to give the greatest gift.

    21:58-21:59

    What is that gift?

    21:59-22:01

Well, the Bible says the gift is everything.

    22:03-22:05

    every spiritual blessing in Christ.

    22:06-22:10

And those who call Jesus Christ Lord just naturally follow his example.

    22:12-22:17

That's why, church, listen, we're not gonna twist any arms to give.

    22:17-22:22

And this sermon series is not about a guilt trip because the truth is if you don't wanna give, don't give.

    22:25-22:25

    It's a hard thing.

    22:27-22:28

    It's an act of worship.

    22:29-22:41

And we're not going to enforce you to give any more than we would enforce you to sing better during music time. That's worship to like, little louder, please, you don't sound like you're worshiping.

    22:42-22:43

    has to come from here.

    22:45-22:47

So it was given, it comes from here.

    22:49-22:50

    The heart issue.

    22:52-23:02

Paul's point here is you're given as an expression of the truth of the gospel, because Jesus so gave himself selflessly.

    23:04-23:06

That's the attitude that we're to have when we give.

    23:06-23:07

    So we give selflessly.

    23:07-23:10

Number two, when we give like Jesus.

    23:12-23:13

    We finish what we start.

    23:14-23:16

Look at verses 10 through 12.

    23:17-23:20

He said, and in this manner, I give my judgment.

    23:22-23:30

This benefits you who a year ago started not only to do this work, but also to desire to do it.

    23:32-23:34

You started this because you really wanted to do it.

    23:34-23:35

    Remember that last year?

    23:35-23:41

You were so fired up about it, and you started this because your hearts were ready.

    23:42-23:56

Verse 11, he says, "So now finish." So now finish doing it as well, so that your readiness and desiring it may be matched by by your completing it out of what you have.

    23:58-23:59

    See what he's saying.

    24:01-24:05

Finish, verse 11, the end of verse 11, he says, complete.

    24:07-24:09

There it is again, out of what you have.

    24:11-24:14

Oh Paul, I don't have a lot to give.

    24:15-24:16

Give out of what you have.

    24:18-24:19

    We'll do verse 12.

    24:19-24:25

For if the readiness is there, is acceptable according to what a person has, not according to what he does not have.

    24:26-24:28

Nobody's asking you to give something you don't have.

    24:29-24:32

You give according to what you do have, you see?

    24:35-24:39

Like, man, I am going to rob a store so I have money to give.

    24:40-24:40

    No, no, no.

    24:41-24:44

Give according to what you have.

    24:47-24:48

What's the point of these verses?

    24:48-24:51

"Well, I think you see it there, it's pretty obvious.

    24:52-24:56

"It's easy to get excited at first "and then drop off over time, right?

    24:58-25:05

"Like, hey, we're taking an offering "for these poor churches in Jerusalem." And Paul mentions a year passing.

    25:06-25:08

It was a lot easier to get fired up at the time, right?

    25:09-25:16

"Yes, yes, we should do that, yes, yeah, let's do it, "let's do it." And then over time, our excitement for anything fades over time.

    25:17-25:19

I was like, "Hey, remember how excited you were?

    25:19-25:20

"Remember how excited you were to start?

    25:20-25:25

"Let's be that excited to finish." Okay, keep it going, keep it going.

    25:25-25:27

Finish as strong as you started.

    25:28-25:32

Again, it's not about the amount, it's about the willingness.

    25:32-25:35

That's the point, it's about the willingness, the willingness.

    25:36-25:37

Give according to what you have.

    25:40-25:44

If you're not sure, it's worth giving a little bit.

    25:44-25:58

If all you have is a little bit, Ask the kid who gave his lunch to Jesus, when Jesus multiplied it to feed thousands of people, ask that kid what God can do when you joyfully give him something that seems small to you.

    25:59-26:00

    I wasn't there.

    26:01-26:03

All I know from that account is what the Bible says.

    26:04-26:17

But I wonder sometimes if that kid that had the two little fishes and the five loaves of bread his mom packed him, you know, I'm sure in his Moses lunchbox, I'm sure that kid when he handed that to Jesus.

    26:17-26:19

I just can't help but wonder there was a thought in his head.

    26:21-26:23

    Everybody's hungry and I don't have much.

    26:24-26:25

I don't know what's going to happen with this.

    26:26-26:27

    And what did Jesus do?

    26:28-26:32

Fed so many people and even had enough that each of the apostles.

    26:34-26:36

Had a lunch bucket to take with them, too.

    26:38-26:40

Ask that kid what God can do with a little bit.

    26:41-26:43

Because it's not about the amount.

    26:44-26:48

It's about the willingness to give what you have.

    26:50-26:55

So I would encourage you, don't be discouraged by the need.

    26:58-27:18

You can look at the need of so many people needing money for, you know, whether it's should work or planning churches or everything from, you know, domestic abuse and, you know, pro-life, you know, pregnancy centers and all good things.

    27:18-27:29

And it's easy to look at all of these things and say, "Wow, I wish I could give a billion dollars to every one of them, but I can't." Don't let that discourage you.

    27:30-27:30

    What can you give?

    27:32-27:34

Give according to what you have, Paul said.

    27:34-27:35

Don't be discouraged by the need.

    27:36-27:38

Don't be discouraged by the amount that you can give.

    27:38-27:41

My encouragement to you is to just joyfully put it in God's hand.

    27:42-27:44

Just joyfully put whatever you have in God's hand.

    27:46-27:50

But as Paul reminds the Corinthians here, finish what you start.

    27:51-27:52

    Finish what you start.

    27:53-27:55

Don't let discouragement get you off track.

    27:56-27:57

    Finish what you start.

    27:57-28:04

And finally, when we give like Jesus, everyone is taken care of.

    28:07-28:37

Verses 13 and 14, Paul says, "For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness, your abundance at the present time should supply their need so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness, not lopsided favoritism, right?

    28:38-28:42

Paul's point here is everyone is taking care of everyone else.

    28:44-28:50

He says, you know what, right now, they have a desperate need, and you have a little extra.

    28:52-28:53

    Give it to them.

    28:54-28:54

    Why?

    28:56-29:02

Because in just a few pages of the calendar term, you're going to be the one that has a need.

    29:03-29:06

And maybe they're in a position where they have a little extra.

    29:06-29:08

I guess what they're going to do, they're going to send it your way.

    29:10-29:29

And then in verse 15, he says, "As it is written," and he quotes, this is from Exodus chapter 16 and verse 18, "As it is written, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack." What's that verse all about?

    29:31-29:33

Do you remember when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt?

    29:33-29:35

Do you remember how the Lord fed them?

    29:36-29:38

    He gave them manna.

    29:38-29:40

    And what is manna?

    29:41-29:46

Well, every morning this stuff would appear on the ground, this perfect food.

    29:48-29:59

They would gather this stuff up and it appeared on the ground every day Sabbath and you were supposed to gather enough for two days the day before, you're like, "Well, what is manna?" And that's right.

    30:00-30:08

Manna means, "What is it?" We actually, I don't know how it is in your house, but we have manna a lot at our house.

    30:10-30:19

Because Aaron will make something, I'll say, "What is it?" And please don't tell her I told you that.

    30:22-30:24

I see people getting their phones out.

    30:24-30:25

    She's not answering.

    30:28-30:31

Well, Manna was a funny thing.

    30:33-30:36

Because everybody had just the right amount.

    30:36-30:37

No matter how much they gathered.

    30:39-30:47

And of course you'd have the people that were like, I'm not sure if it's coming tomorrow, so I'm going to gather a bunch extra and I'm going to keep like a storehouse of it.

    30:49-30:52

rot and stink if you tried to do that.

    30:53-30:59

And God allowed that so that people knew that they had to trust God every day.

    31:00-31:12

Every day, every morning when I open my eyes, it's like, "Oh, got to trust God today." Concerning the manna, the Bible says that, "Whoever gathered much had nothing left over.

    31:13-31:18

Whoever gathered little had no lack." And for the families, like, we didn't gather very much.

    31:18-31:18

    They weren't hungry.

    31:19-31:20

    It filled them up.

    31:21-31:23

And why in the world is he quoting this verse here?

    31:24-31:41

Well, the point is this, based on what he had just said, the church, the church is to replicate the principle behind Exodus 16, 18, meaning this church, we are to manifest the heart of God by taking care of each other.

    31:43-31:45

And what does that look like?

    31:46-31:51

You know that this is not the extent of the kingdom of God right now, right?

    31:51-31:58

In this room, in this school cafeteria, this does not constitute the entirety of the kingdom of God.

    31:58-32:13

There are faithful churches all over the planet, and this particular church, we're tied into a fellowship of churches, a very quickly growing fellowship of churches where there are like 110 now all over the world in a very young church movement.

    32:15-32:30

Something a lot of you might not know, when this church was starting out, you know, it takes a lot of money to start a church, to rent and to pay the preacher and to get the equipment and the signage and all of that stuff.

    32:31-32:32

Like, where does that money come from?

    32:33-32:36

And I had people think, well, doesn't James McDonald just like write you a check?

    32:36-32:38

    No, he doesn't.

    32:39-32:41

You know, it comes from within.

    32:41-32:47

It comes from faithful people like you who believe in the ministry and support the ministry, and that keeps us going.

    32:47-32:55

But understand, startup, there was a huge cost out of nowhere from a human perspective but under God's sovereignty.

    32:55-33:02

He put it on the hearts of Harvest Bible Chapel in Oakville in Niagara up in Canada.

    33:03-33:08

They sent us somewhere between seven and $8,000 when we got started.

    33:09-33:16

Oakville is very established, it's a very large church, and they were doing some mission giving, and it was late in their hearts.

    33:16-33:31

They said, "Hey, we know you guys are getting started, "and how are things with your budget?" And we're like, "Man, it's pretty tight right now." And they said, "We'll send you a gift." And they sent us, it was somewhere between seven and $8,000 so that we could get started.

    33:33-33:39

And now we are in a position where we can help the next church.

    33:41-34:00

Understand that when you give in those velvety bags that come around, that not only supports the ministry and the work that's happening here, but a portion of what you give goes to plant more harvest Bible chapels, to train more pastors, and to get more churches just like this one planted all over the world.

    34:02-34:18

We also have plans, the elders have been discussing plans to work with some Harvest Bible Chapels in Romania because right now they're working on building a training center like the one that I attended in Chicago to train pastors to plant more churches like this one all over Europe.

    34:22-34:29

But just as we were recipients of a gift to get going, we're in a position where we can help other churches.

    34:30-34:33

And right now there's somebody thinking, Pastor Jeff, we can't do that.

    34:33-34:37

How in the world can a church like this help other churches?

    34:37-34:42

I mean, look, we're small and we're young, and let's be honest, we have needs here, right?

    34:42-34:45

There's people that need paid here, there's mission work that needs done here.

    34:46-34:48

How in the world can we do this?

    34:49-34:54

My answer is, that's the whole point of 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

    34:56-34:56

    How can we do it?

    34:58-35:03

We do it joyfully, and we do it according with what we have.

    35:05-35:09

God's not saying we need to send the next church seven or $8,000.

    35:11-35:12

God's saying, what do you have?

    35:14-35:15

And how can you use that?

    35:17-35:18

Help the next church in need.

    35:20-35:23

So joyfully and according to what we have.

    35:25-35:39

So can you say, I love to give because God is making me more and more like Jesus.

    35:42-35:43

    And Jesus loves to give.

    35:44-35:44

    Let's pray.

    35:46-35:49

Father in heaven, thank you for your word.

    35:50-36:26

I thank you, Father, that you have not called us to give some kind of a slick, persuasive speech to coerce or guilt people because that's not your heart God your heart is on display in Jesus Christ who had everything I was willing to give it all up so that we can have everything that's a level of generosity that certainly we We can't replicate, we can imitate.

    36:28-36:30

Help us, Father, to be selfless.

    36:31-36:34

Help us, Father, to continue to grow to understand that giving is worship.

    36:37-36:40

And that when we start something, we should finish it.

    36:40-36:53

We shouldn't let external circumstances discourage us or take our eyes off of you and put our eyes on the checkbook and suddenly be discouraged that maybe we can't give anything.

    36:53-37:19

And don't let discouragement stop us from the mission that you called us to because you've proven over and over in your word that when we put a little bit in your hands, you use it exponentially and you multiply it and all you're looking for is somebody who loves you and is willing to put something in your hands.

    37:21-37:26

Father, help us as a church, and help us, I pray, as a fellowship of churches.

    37:27-37:47

Just as this example was set in Scripture with the Macedonian churches and the Corinthian church, and the church in Jerusalem, watching each other's backs, God, you put us in a fellowship where we've been the recipient of churches watching our back and I thank you that we're in a position where we can help some other churches get going.

    37:49-37:50

So God, it's all in your glory and honor.

    37:51-38:04

It's all to see your kingdom advance and it's all to see your son lifted high as he is glorified and as he is worshipped and he can take you to draw people to himself.

    38:04-38:07

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Parents / Children Discussion Questions:

Discuss this passage / sermon with your children this week! Ask: "Why does the church take an offering? What happens with that money?" Explain how the money we give: supports this ministry, helps Harvest Bible Fellowship (which trains pastors and plants more churches), and helps other various needs (Moldova church offering, Action Packs, etc).

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read 2 Corinthians 8:8-15

  1. Explain 2 Corinthians 8:9. What does this mean? Why did Paul say this in the middle of a passage on giving? What does this say about how we should give?

  2. Why did Paul quote Exodus 16:18 in 2 Corinthians 8:15? What was his point?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another!

Because I Am a Steward

A Steward Says...

"
I got something to GIVE...!" (2 Cor 8:1-3)

"
I got something to GIVE, and I WANT to Give it...!" (2 Cor 8:4)

"I got something to GIVE, and I WANT to Give it, because Giving is WORSHIP...!" (2 Cor 8:5-7)

Open up your Bibles to the book of 2 Corinthians.

    00:06-00:12

2 Corinthians, we're going to be in chapter 8 and 9 over these next four weeks.

    00:12-00:18

Today we're going to be in the first seven verses of 2 Corinthians, chapter 8.

    00:21-00:23

I've been in ministry now for about 18 years.

    00:23-00:35

I've been around the block a few times, and I know, even if people don't say it, as soon that we're going to be talking about money, immediately it stirs a reaction.

    00:37-00:38

    People roll their eyes.

    00:40-00:41

    Here we go.

    00:42-00:45

Pack your suitcase because we're going on a guilt trip.

    00:46-00:50

And obviously there's some financial concern the church has.

    00:50-01:03

And Ken was like, "Jeff, you've got to get up there and tell those people to give more or little Ronald and Donald aren't going to have food on the table." And I want to tell you that that is not the case, okay?

    01:05-01:08

Financially we're in good shape right now.

    01:09-01:13

We haven't always been able to say that, but right now the church is in good shape financially.

    01:13-01:21

So I don't want you to read into these next four weeks as, "This is some appeal to keep the doors open of the church." And it's not that at all.

    01:23-02:28

And I also want you to understand, I've told you this often, but we have some guests with us today and maybe some of you haven't heard me say this, but understand that I don't know what a single person in this church gives. Okay? We have, you know, Ken and he has people, he has a whole system set up with people and I don't touch the money and I don't know what anybody in this church gives. And I want it that way Because when we have to dispute matters or discuss matters between two families that are disputing, there's always the tendency for, you know, "Oh, you can't lose this family because they're big givers," and we don't want any of that, right? So it's just better for us to not know who gives what. This is between you and the Lord. So understand that up front. I don't know who gives what, and this sermon series is not some appeal. You know, the ship is going down, you better give more, we're having a Harvest Bible Chapel telethon.

    02:29-02:54

It's not that at all. Okay? So why are we talking about money if we're not in a crisis? I believe it was Howard Dayton who originally said this, often times repeated, but the Bible has about 500 verses in it on prayer. And I think that And the Bible has about 500 verses in it about faith.

    02:56-03:03

And the Bible has about 2 ,350 verses in it about money and possessions.

    03:05-03:05

    Why?

    03:08-03:10

Because money is a spiritual barometer.

    03:13-03:21

And we're going to talk about that a little bit this morning, but just like you have gauges in your car that indicate the state of affairs in your car.

    03:21-03:24

    Money is a spiritual barometer.

    03:26-03:31

And Jesus said you can tell a lot about a person spiritually by what they do with money.

    03:33-03:41

And if the Bible spends so much time talking about money, it would be remiss of us to not address it.

    03:44-03:51

500 verses on prayer, 500 on faith, 2,350 verses about money and possessions.

    03:54-03:55

Why does the Bible talk so much about it?

    03:55-03:58

Well, the truth is we've become attached to stuff.

    04:00-04:02

It's mine. I earned it. I need it.

    04:02-04:04

I should decide what to do with it.

    04:05-04:16

And really, over these next four weeks, there's really one big teaching that we're going to be exploring and that is this - God's people love to give.

    04:18-04:21

For God's people, giving is not an obligation.

    04:24-04:27

They're like, well, I'm giving to the church because I have to give.

    04:27-04:29

    I'm expected to give.

    04:29-04:32

And I'm sure somebody's going to be calling me if I don't give.

    04:32-04:33

    That's not it at all.

    04:36-04:38

The truth is God's people love to give.

    04:39-04:46

God's people believe Jesus He was quoted in Acts 20.35.

    04:47-04:52

This is the only quote from Jesus outside of the Gospels or the book of Revelation.

    04:52-04:52

    Did you know that?

    04:52-04:54

    Acts 20.35.

    04:54-05:11

The only direct quote from Jesus in the Epistles or the book of Acts is this quote when Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give to receive.

    05:13-05:15

Most people do not believe that.

    05:16-05:21

For most people, this verse is about getting a crummy Christmas present.

    05:22-05:22

    Right?

    05:24-05:26

Like, I got her a leather jacket.

    05:28-05:31

And she got me a Pez dispenser.

    05:33-05:35

How do you feel about that?

    05:35-05:39

Well, you know, it's more blessed to give than to receive.

    05:40-05:45

And that verse has nothing to do with how much you liked your Christmas present.

    05:47-05:50

It is more blessed to give than to receive.

    05:51-06:01

But none of this that we talk about over these next four weeks is going to make sense to you if we don't start with one fundamental thing.

    06:04-06:05

That's what I want to spend some time on today.

    06:06-06:25

Please hear this, because if you miss this, The next four weeks are going to be here and gone, and by February, you're going to be like, "What was that all about?" But you have to start with this fundamental thing, and that is this statement, "Nothing is mine." Can you say that?

    06:26-06:30

I'm going to say it, and then I'm going to give you the opportunity to say that.

    06:30-06:30

    Are you ready?

    06:31-06:37

"Nothing is mine." I want you to say it again with real conviction.

    06:37-06:38

    Go ahead.

    06:40-06:41

    Nothing is mine.

    06:43-06:49

If you don't get that, you're never going to understand finances biblically.

    06:50-06:51

    Nothing is mine.

    06:53-06:58

The title of this message is "I Love to Give Why Because I'm a Steward." Do you know what a steward is?

    07:00-07:01

It's kind of a biblical term.

    07:03-07:05

Kind of a churchy term, but really it just means manager.

    07:06-07:06

    Right?

    07:07-07:08

    That's what you are.

    07:10-07:21

I want you to think about your house, wherever you live, your car, whatever you drive, the stuff in your closet - it's not yours.

    07:24-07:26

    You are a steward.

    07:26-07:31

You are a manager of stuff for the few years that you have on the earth.

    07:32-07:33

    I've told you stories before.

    07:33-07:35

When I went through college, I worked at Walmart.

    07:35-07:38

And understand at Walmart, a whole bunch of managers.

    07:38-07:41

Those managers don't own the stuff.

    07:42-07:51

Those managers aren't like, "These are my bicycles." "These are my blenders." They don't own anything in that store.

    07:53-07:59

Their job is to manage the stuff in the store.

    08:01-08:06

And you are like a Walmart manager, your Walmart is a lot smaller.

    08:08-08:31

You just have stuff that you've been put in charge of taking care of for the time that you're on the earth. You're a steward. What did you bring with you? What did you bring with you into the earth? I watched two boys be born. My two boys. The only two births that I've witnessed.

    08:31-08:35

But I'll tell you one thing, both of them came out of the womb with nothing in their hands.

    08:36-08:37

    Okay?

    08:39-08:40

    Naked and empty handed.

    08:41-08:42

And what are you going to take with you?

    08:44-08:45

    The same, right?

    08:46-08:48

You've never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul, have you?

    08:50-08:52

You're leaving with exactly what you brought.

    08:53-09:03

So for the time that you have on the earth, there is a certain amount of stuff that passes through your hands that God says, "I'm putting you in charge of handling this stuff.

    09:04-09:11

You're going to manage this stuff." And yes, some of it, you're supposed to use and enjoy on yourself.

    09:11-09:16

And some of it, you are supposed to give to care for other people.

    09:17-09:19

And some you are to give to advance the kingdom.

    09:20-09:22

And some you are to save for your children.

    09:26-09:33

This stuff passing through your hands, it's not really yours.

    09:36-09:36

    I'm a steward.

    09:38-09:45

Psalm 24 verse 1 says, "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof." It's God's.

    09:46-09:47

    It's God's.

    09:47-09:49

    Everything is God's.

    09:51-10:03

And a steward is someone who loves to give, because there is not attachment to the stuff.

    10:06-10:07

Do you understand what I am saying?

    10:07-10:09

There is not an attachment to the stuff.

    10:13-10:19

Now the steward says, "I'm free to redistribute this.

    10:19-10:24

I'm free to give it because I'm not attached to it.

    10:25-10:37

Because I know it's not mine." And if you're not sold on that, I'm going to prove it to you beyond a shadow of a doubt right now.

    10:37-10:38

Who has some cash on them?

    10:40-10:41

    Anybody have some cash?

    10:42-10:58

your hand, who's got some cash? Get it out, get it out. Come on, this is important, I'm gonna prove it. Oh, that's Ken's cash? That's not the church's? Okay, it came out of your wallet. Ken's keeping his money in your wallet.

    11:01-11:02

Now the question is, how did that feel?

    11:04-11:08

Let me ask Ken, how did that feel? Not great.

    11:09-11:25

I want you to watch this. Ben Moll, here. Ben, you can give that to anybody you want except for the Fredericks. Right now, give it to anybody you want. Anybody at all that you want. Anybody.

    11:26-11:35

How did that feel? That felt good, didn't it? Didn't that feel good? Now wait a minute, let's back up here for a second.

    11:35-11:37

    Why didn't this feel good?

    11:39-11:40

    That was my money.

    11:42-11:47

Amanda was just holding it for me. Ben felt great. Why?

    11:49-12:00

He didn't have an attachment to it. He's like, "Check this out. It's fun to give when you realize it's not yours.

    12:02-12:03

    And until you get that?

    12:05-12:45

Giving is going to seem like a chore. Until you get to that place where like Ben, "This is great! He just handed me stuff and told me to give it to someone else." Yeah, that's what God does. God says, "Here's some stuff. Now give it away. Use it for someone else. Open your Bibles to 2 Corinthians 8. Are you 2 Corinthians 8, a steward says, "I love to give and quickly today three things.

    12:46-13:00

Number one, a steward says, "I got something to give." A steward says, "I got something to give." Look at verse 1.

    13:01-13:10

Paul says, "We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia." I'm going to stop there.

    13:10-13:11

    What's he talking about?

    13:12-13:14

Understand this word grace comes up.

    13:14-13:16

    It's in verse 6 and it's in verse 7.

    13:17-13:18

    He keeps talking about grace.

    13:20-13:22

    He's talking about giving.

    13:22-13:24

And you're going to see that is so clear from the context.

    13:25-13:35

grace, he's talking about an offering that was taken. Why doesn't he just call it an offering? Because we're going to see in this passage he's making a point.

    13:35-13:37

    It's grace.

    13:39-13:52

It's freely and lovingly given. It's grace. And that's how he refers to this offering. I actually jot this reference on 1st 1 Corinthians 16, verses 1-4.

    13:55-14:03

The first letter that Paul wrote to the Corinthians, he told them that he was taking a collection for the poor Christians in Jerusalem.

    14:04-14:06

Many of them were being persecuted for their faith.

    14:06-14:11

And in those days, a Jewish man coming to faith in Christ would quickly lose his business.

    14:13-14:46

So you had all these Christians in Jerusalem who were dirt poor, and now you have all these churches in support. And when we get to this passage we're looking at over these next four weeks, Paul's revisiting the subject. And he's encouraging the Corinthians to give by highlighting the Macedonians example. That's the point of this passage. Like, here are the Macedonians. Really, it would have been like three churches. It was Berea, and the church at Philippi, and the church at Thessalonica.

    14:47-14:50

Okay, so those churches, you know, fall under the umbrella, they're the Macedonians.

    14:51-14:56

And in this passage we're looking at, Paul's like, "Hey, we're taking an offering "for these poor Christians in Jerusalem.

    14:57-14:58

"Check out how these guys gave.

    15:00-15:06

"Check out how these people gave." Look at verse two, like how did they give?

    15:06-15:19

"For in a severe test of affliction, "their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.

    15:23-15:30

Notice he says, "These people were poor themselves." You see that?

    15:31-15:32

    He says, "They're extreme poverty.

    15:33-15:41

They were poor themselves." But notice the Macedonians didn't use that as an excuse.

    15:43-15:51

That would be like going to the poorest church in the Pittsburgh area and saying, "Hey, we're raising money for missions.

    15:52-15:56

Can you give?" That's what the Macedonians were like.

    15:59-16:00

Then he uses the word generosity.

    16:01-16:02

This is a very interesting word.

    16:02-16:04

I was studying this this week.

    16:05-16:11

The word for generosity really ties into the idea of being single-minded.

    16:13-16:21

He says, "This has overflown into a wealth of generosity on their part." Their giving was single-minded.

    16:22-16:36

They're like, "Well, what does that have to do with giving?" Because most of us, by nature, when we give, have a temptation to be double-minded.

    16:37-16:41

Meaning this, "I would really like to give to that mission, but you know what?

    16:41-16:42

I kind of need that money.

    16:43-16:46

But the mission really needs that, but you know what, I kind of need it too.

    16:46-16:47

    That's the double-mindedness.

    16:48-16:54

Like, I see that it's important what they're doing for this mission, but at the same time, I kind of need that myself.

    16:55-16:56

    That's being double-minded.

    16:57-17:01

Or, there's a great need there, but there's also a need here.

    17:02-17:06

And should we really be taking care of them there if there's such a need here?

    17:06-17:11

The Macedonians certainly, in one sense, would have been justified to say that.

    17:11-17:12

    Like, "They're poor.

    17:12-17:13

    Hey, guess what?

    17:13-17:13

    We're poor too.

    17:15-17:21

Why don't the people in Jerusalem, why don't they send us an offering?" That's double-minded.

    17:22-17:27

And here, Paul is saying, "No, no, no, no." Their generosity was single-minded.

    17:28-17:35

They weren't thinking, "We need it too." They weren't thinking, "We have our own set of problems." Their mindset was, "Oh, there's a need?

    17:36-17:36

    Okay.

    17:37-17:39

Oh, we're gonna give to help these poor Christians?

    17:39-17:41

    Okay, let's do it.

    17:41-17:45

But where do I sign up?" Generosity.

    17:47-18:05

In verse three, he says, "For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means of their own accord." They gave according to their means.

    18:05-18:06

    They were stewards.

    18:09-18:15

So understand church, God is not asking you to give according to someone else's means.

    18:16-18:23

Paul's like, "They gave according to their means." Like that commercial, "What's in your wallet?" Right, did you see that commercial?

    18:23-18:24

"What's in your wallet?" What's that commercial for?

    18:26-18:27

    Capital one, right?

    18:27-18:34

"What's in your wallet?" When it's time to give, You give according to your means.

    18:35-18:42

God's not asking you to give according to my means or Bill Gates's means.

    18:42-18:45

He says, you give according to your means.

    18:49-18:50

That's one of the things you hear a lot in the church.

    18:50-18:52

People say, you know, if I had more money, I'd give more.

    18:55-18:56

    Actually, that's not true.

    18:58-18:58

    That's not true.

    18:59-19:01

Let's say, for example, let's say you're sold on tithing.

    19:01-19:02

I'm gonna talk about tithing here in a second.

    19:03-19:05

But let's say you're like, you know what, I think tithing is a good principle.

    19:05-19:06

    Tithing is a good principle.

    19:07-19:09

Let's say, you know what, I'm going to tithe.

    19:09-19:14

If you came to church with 10 dimes, could you give one of the dimes to the church?

    19:17-19:17

    That's easy, right?

    19:19-19:22

What if you came to church with 10 $20 bills in your pocket?

    19:23-19:25

Can you give one of the $20 bills?

    19:28-19:29

Like, yeah, I think I could.

    19:29-19:33

What if you came to church and you had ten $100 bills in your pocket.

    19:37-19:42

Could you give one of your ten $100 bills, could you do that?

    19:43-19:47

Do you see how the more you have, all of a sudden now it feels harder?

    19:48-19:53

Giving a $100 bill out of 10 feels a lot harder than giving a dime out of 10, doesn't it?

    19:55-19:58

So this idea of if I had more, I'd give more, that's just not true.

    19:58-20:02

Jesus said, "If you're faithful with a little, you'll be faithful with," what?

    20:02-20:16

"A lot." You know, as a preacher, I hear people saying that, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, I just wish that I had more money, I'd give more money to the church." And first of all, I don't know what you give.

    20:18-20:24

And that's a very generous sentiment, but the truth is, if you had more money, you probably wouldn't.

    20:26-20:37

If you're not joyfully giving out of what you have now, what in the world makes you think you're going to joyfully give out of what you would have if you were rich?

    20:39-20:43

Like all of the sudden, my whole mindset towards generosity has changed.

    20:46-20:47

    It's not how it works.

    20:49-20:51

So a steward says, you know what, I got something to give.

    20:51-20:54

The Macedonians were like, you know what, we don't got much, but we got something.

    20:54-20:57

and we're going to give according to what we do have.

    20:57-20:59

So church, can you joyfully give something?

    21:03-21:09

The next thing on your outline, I got something to give and I want to give it.

    21:13-21:15

I got something to give and I want to give it.

    21:16-21:17

    Look at verse four.

    21:19-21:22

Paul says, these Macedonians, look at this.

    21:23-21:24

    This verse is crazy.

    21:26-21:34

Begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints.

    21:38-21:39

    Look at the language used.

    21:39-21:42

    Begging for the favor.

    21:45-21:49

Did I hear somebody say we were taking an offering?

    21:50-21:55

Oh, they were like, please, please, please, please, can we give, can we please give?

    21:55-22:00

And Paul's like, you know what, you guys are poor, you guys probably need it there.

    22:00-22:04

No, no, no, please, oh, come on, come on, come on, please.

    22:04-22:05

It would be like doing us a favor.

    22:06-22:10

We would consider it a favor if you would let us be a part of this offering.

    22:11-22:14

And I'm sure Paul did not try to talk them out of it, but you get the point, right?

    22:14-22:15

    You get the point?

    22:15-22:17

    They were begging.

    22:20-22:28

It wasn't as if Paul was like, "We're taking an offering for the poor saints in Jerusalem." Alright, get the checkbook.

    22:28-22:31

How much do you think we should give?

    22:33-22:47

Paul says when they found out that an offering was being taken, they were begging earnestly for the favor of taking part in it.

    22:49-22:56

It's at this point in the message, honestly, I just feel like we're preaching to the choir here, because you have proven yourselves so generous.

    22:57-23:04

We're raising $4 ,000 to help rebuild a pastor's home in Moldova, a pastor that you've never met.

    23:04-23:06

A pastor that you couldn't pick out of a lineup.

    23:08-23:26

And we said, "Hey, his house is crumbling down around him, and urgent need, and you raised almost $6,000 in four weeks, going above and beyond." We talked about the action packs, you know, sending these action packs over for these persecuted Christians.

    23:28-23:40

And you responded, I didn't hear anybody say, "Oh, you mean the church is trying to get another dime out of us to send overseas?" All I heard was, "Tell me about these action packs." "Oh, you know, the Thompson's small group, they're putting this stuff together." I said, "That's awesome!

    23:41-23:47

Like what do I do for that?" You're just like the Macedonians, like, "Please, please, please, can we be a part of that?

    23:47-23:48

Can we be a part of that?

    23:50-23:52

We've encountered some needs here in our church.

    23:53-23:54

    Immediate urgent needs.

    23:58-24:01

The people were trampling each other to give.

    24:01-24:04

Like, "Hey, here's a family that has needs." We had people like, "Oh, I want to give.

    24:04-24:10

I want to give." I would have people email me and text me like, "Hey, Pastor Jeff, I really want to give to this family.

    24:10-24:14

Can I please help out?" That's crazy.

    24:16-24:30

it supernatural? That's Christian giving. He said, "Not only do I have something to give, but I want to give it." And you're like, "Oh, hold on pastor.

    24:30-24:36

Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop." I thought the Bible said you had to give.

    24:37-24:46

Right? Like the tithe. Doesn't the Bible say like you have to tithe? That's like a a commandment, and doesn't the Bible say that you have to give?

    24:46-24:52

So all this stuff you're talking about, it's not really like an option, because you have to do it.

    24:54-24:55

    Actually that's not true.

    24:58-25:00

Like I said, I believe tithing is a great principle.

    25:02-25:04

But tithing is not commanded in the New Testament.

    25:05-25:06

    Now stay with me here.

    25:08-25:10

We're going to be looking at this passage, 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

    25:11-25:15

If tithing were commanded in the New Testament, surely Paul would have brought it up here.

    25:16-25:25

But the only thing he ever addresses anywhere in this passage, and really anywhere else in the New Testament when it comes to giving, it's all free will.

    25:26-25:28

It's all choosing to give joyfully.

    25:29-25:35

But the command that you must give 10% to the church, that command is not in the New Testament.

    25:38-25:45

You're like, "Well, then what's the deal with tithing?" Well, actually, this came from Old Testament times.

    25:45-25:50

Old Testament Israel, you know that they had three tithes.

    25:50-25:50

    Did you know that?

    25:52-26:00

It wasn't just, "I give 10 %." Israel actually gave 23 and a third percent.

    26:02-26:03

    Where did that come from?

    26:03-26:05

Well, you can jot these references down.

    26:05-26:07

I encourage you to be a student of the Word.

    26:08-26:10

But in Old Testament Israel, there were three tithes.

    26:10-26:12

The first one was to support the Levites.

    26:13-26:16

The Levites were the tribe of Israel that God set aside.

    26:17-26:18

They were going to do His work.

    26:18-26:21

They were going to conduct His business and run the temple.

    26:24-26:26

The first tithe was to support them.

    26:29-26:30

    That's in Leviticus 27.

    26:31-26:35

But there was a second tithe that was to pay for annual festivals.

    26:35-26:37

    That's in Deuteronomy chapter 12.

    26:37-26:43

those feasts and festivals, they would collect a tithe to pay for those.

    26:46-26:51

The third tithe was every three years you paid another 10%.

    26:51-27:05

That's where the 23 and a third came from. See, every three years you paid another 10% and that went to the poor. That went to the orphans and the fatherless, the widows.

    27:05-27:10

Because that was to help the people in the camp who were poor.

    27:13-27:16

And in the Old Testament, tithing was not optional.

    27:17-27:21

When you study the Old Testament, God said this is required.

    27:22-27:28

It's not like, "I feel like tithing, I don't feel like tithing." Israel had to pay the tithe.

    27:28-27:28

    Why?

    27:29-27:30

It's like us paying our taxes.

    27:31-27:35

The money that they gave wasn't just for religious reasons.

    27:35-27:37

It was for the good of the community.

    27:38-27:40

Okay, like us paying our income taxes.

    27:43-27:44

And those aren't optional, by the way.

    27:46-27:47

That's how it was in the Old Testament.

    27:47-27:49

God says, "Look, you've got to support the Levites.

    27:49-27:51

    You have these national festivals.

    27:51-27:52

You've got to pay for that.

    27:52-27:54

And then we've got to look after these people that are poor.

    27:56-28:01

You're going to help support them too." Required giving.

    28:04-28:07

But the tithe was not free will giving.

    28:07-28:11

There are many, many, many examples of free will giving in the Old Testament.

    28:11-28:20

For example, when David was talking, was addressing Israel about building the temple, which he didn't do, Solomon did it, 1 Chronicles 29.

    28:21-28:23

He was talking about people free will giving.

    28:24-28:30

Exodus chapter 35, when Moses was making plans to build the tabernacle, it was about free will giving.

    28:33-28:35

    That's New Testament type giving.

    28:37-28:46

There's a phrase used in the Old Testament that I think still applies today when it comes to our free will giving.

    28:47-28:51

And that's the phrase "first fruits." Write that down.

    28:51-28:52

Do you know what first fruits are?

    28:55-28:59

First fruits was the attitude that you were to have when you gave.

    29:01-29:05

See, the person that loves to give, gives of their first fruits.

    29:05-29:11

You're like, "What is first fruits?" Okay, well, keep in mind, many of the people in this day were farmers.

    29:12-29:32

And when they would harvest, they would not say, "Okay, well, let's harvest everything and assess how much we have and then see if we have anything left over to give to God." which by the way is how people typically give in America, honestly.

    29:33-29:41

It's well, let me pay my bills and let me see how much I have left and then maybe I'll give God a portion of what I have left.

    29:41-29:44

    That's not biblical giving.

    29:44-29:49

First fruits was, I'm going to give God first and I'm going to give God the best.

    29:50-29:57

When they brought the harvest in, they would say, okay, the first and best portion of this harvest, we are giving to the Lord.

    29:57-29:58

    Why?

    29:58-29:59

It's our way of saying thank you.

    30:00-30:02

It's our way of acknowledging that it came from Him.

    30:02-30:05

And it's our way of saying by faith God, we trust that You're going to keep bringing it.

    30:06-30:07

    We're trusting You with it.

    30:08-30:09

    That's first fruits.

    30:09-30:12

I give God first and I give God best.

    30:12-30:17

Not, I'll think about maybe giving God something if I have anything left over.

    30:18-30:19

    If I have too much.

    30:19-30:24

If I have a batch of rotten apples, I'll see about donating them.

    30:27-30:30

I understand that even in the Old Testament, giving was about the heart.

    30:32-30:36

Giving was about acknowledging God's ownership on what passed through your hands.

    30:36-30:41

And giving was about faith, even in the Old Testament.

    30:42-30:43

And that's how it is in the New Testament.

    30:45-30:46

Church, giving is about the heart.

    30:47-30:48

    It's not the amount.

    30:49-30:51

    It's not the percentage.

    30:52-30:53

    Ok?

    30:53-31:01

I guarantee you Ken's not sitting at home adding machine trying to figure out, "Well, this is how much he gave, but is that truly a tithe?

    31:01-31:05

That would mean that he makes X amount at his job." He is not doing that.

    31:06-31:07

    Because it's not about that.

    31:08-31:09

    It's about the heart.

    31:11-31:16

It's about making up your mind what you want to give joyfully.

    31:17-31:19

    That's Christian giving.

    31:22-31:24

And Jesus boiled it all down in Matthew 6.21.

    31:26-31:34

Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." That's an objective test.

    31:34-31:36

Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    31:37-31:43

People want to reverse that and say, "Where your heart is, that's where your treasure is." "Oh, Pastor Jeff, my heart is with the church.

    31:44-31:46

    That's where my treasure is.

    31:46-31:49

And Pastor Jeff, my heart is with those poor, abused animals.

    31:50-31:51

So that's where my treasure is.

    31:52-31:54

Jesus said, "That's not how you take that test.

    31:55-31:59

"You show me your checkbook, "I'll show you where your heart is.

    32:00-32:01

    "Show me your checkbook.

    32:02-32:15

"If I can read through your checkbook, "Pizza Hut, KFC, Burger King, McDonald's, "okay, if that's where your treasure's going, "then that means your heart is to fast food, right?

    32:16-32:22

"Or if I look through your checkbook and it's everything purchases for your children.

    32:22-32:26

I would say, well, their hearts with their children because they're spending all their money on their children.

    32:27-32:42

If I look through your checkbook and I'm supporting this ministry and I'm supporting this missionary and I'm supporting this church, and if I'm going through your checkbook and read all those things, I would think, well, their heart must be with missions because so much of their giving goes towards advancing God's kingdom.

    32:44-32:45

    It's an objective test.

    32:46-32:49

Jesus said where your treasure is, That's where your heart is.

    32:51-32:52

You want to know where your heart is?

    32:54-32:55

You want to know where your heart really is?

    32:56-32:57

    Do a self-evaluation.

    32:57-32:59

How do I spend my money?

    33:01-33:04

How do I handle God's money?

    33:06-33:07

Jesus said, there you'll find your heart.

    33:10-33:17

And finally for today, I got something to give, And I want to give it.

    33:19-33:21

    Because giving is worship.

    33:23-33:24

    Giving is worship.

    33:25-33:28

Look at verses 5-7 as we close up.

    33:29-33:37

He says in this, "Not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.

    33:38-33:50

Accordingly, we urge Titus, that as he had started, so he should complete among you this act of grace." There's that word "grace" again.

    33:50-34:10

"But as you excel in everything, in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you, see that you excel in this act of grace also." First of all, look at that list in verse 7.

    34:11-34:17

It says very quickly, he says to the church in Corinth, You guys are excelling in everything.

    34:18-34:21

    In speech, that's logos.

    34:21-34:22

    That's the Word.

    34:22-34:23

    That's doctrine.

    34:24-34:26

In faith - I'm sorry, I skipped that one.

    34:26-34:28

In faith, that's just your trust in the Lord.

    34:29-34:30

You excel in trusting the Lord.

    34:31-34:34

You excel in speech, in logos, in doctrine.

    34:34-34:37

You excel in understanding the ways of the Lord.

    34:37-34:38

    That's knowledge.

    34:40-34:41

    He says in all earnestness.

    34:42-34:43

    That's spiritual passion.

    34:45-34:46

He says you excel in that.

    34:47-34:55

Your walk with Christ is not some stale, religious, do my check mark because I read my Bible passage for the day.

    34:55-34:57

He says you have spiritual passion.

    34:57-34:59

    You love Christ.

    34:59-35:01

And it's so obvious that you love Christ.

    35:02-35:02

    You're passionate.

    35:06-35:07

    And in love.

    35:11-35:12

God's economy is always at the top.

    35:14-35:32

Now when you look at that list I would ask you which of those are optional things in the Christian walk? Which of them are negotiable? The answer is obviously none of them, right? These things are all important to the Christians walk. They are. That's why Paul says, "See that you You excel in this act of grace also.

    35:34-35:41

In other words, you excel in your walk in every area.

    35:41-35:45

Make sure that you excel when it comes to giving.

    35:48-35:50

These things are part of who you are in Christ.

    35:50-35:51

    So is giving.

    35:53-35:57

And I promised you I would not give you a guilt trip for this whole month.

    35:58-36:02

I'm really going to try hard, In February, I'm really going to lay some guilt on you.

    36:03-36:05

Because I promised specifically for this month.

    36:06-36:08

I'm just kidding, I'm probably not going to do that in February either.

    36:09-36:14

But you know, honestly church, there are lots of reasons that I could give you to give.

    36:15-36:21

You know, before we take our offering, I could get up and I could lay out these impassioned pleas.

    36:21-36:23

Oh church, there's so much need.

    36:23-37:02

We have need, and we can put it up on the screen of the need that we have in our church family community, and we just have this need, we could play a very sad song in the background while we're showing you pictures. That's not a real heart motivator though. Another reason I could give you to give is just through peer pressure. You know what church, we have, you know most people in our church are giving to this mission, and it's really important, so you should give too, and I could make it a peer pressure thing that you're sitting there like, well if If everybody else is giving, somebody's bound to notice that I haven't given anything yet, so I should probably give.

    37:02-37:04

That's not a heart motivator either.

    37:06-37:08

I could motivate you by feeling good.

    37:09-37:09

    You know what?

    37:10-37:14

Nothing will make you feel better today than giving that money.

    37:14-37:16

Nothing's going to make you feel better than giving that money.

    37:17-37:22

I could make it like a sort of a self -motivating thing.

    37:22-37:24

I'll feel good if I give that.

    37:24-37:26

That's not a real heart motivator either.

    37:27-37:28

    What's the heart motivator?

    37:28-37:29

    What's in verse 5?

    37:29-37:30

    Look at it again.

    37:31-37:33

They gave themselves first to the Lord.

    37:35-37:38

They gave themselves first to the Lord.

    37:39-37:40

Why were the Macedonians so generous?

    37:41-37:42

    Why were they so joyful?

    37:42-37:43

Why were they so excited to give?

    37:44-37:47

Why were they so fired up about taking care of these poor Christians?

    37:47-37:48

    What motivated them?

    37:49-37:49

    Here it is, verse 5.

    37:49-37:50

They gave themselves to the Lord.

    37:52-37:53

It was part of their walk.

    37:55-38:01

In other words, giving is worship and love.

    38:04-38:08

    Love always results in giving.

    38:10-38:12

    Love always results in giving.

    38:15-38:19

Married people here, and some of you have been married a lot longer than some others.

    38:22-38:26

Just for a moment, I want you to think about the relationship between the husband and the wife.

    38:29-38:32

When the relationship was young and fresh, do you remember how excited it was to give?

    38:33-38:37

Sneaking off to the flower shop, going to surprise her with some roses.

    38:37-38:38

    You guys remember that?

    38:40-38:41

    You guys remember that?

    38:42-38:51

I got this stuffed animal, this teddy bear, and I sprinkled my cologne on it, and I slid Put it in her mail slot.

    38:51-38:52

    Any guys ever do that?

    38:53-38:54

Many more of you did that, okay?

    38:57-39:00

Do you remember how excited you were to give?

    39:02-39:12

Even if it was, "I was walking down the street and I looked down and I saw this rock in the shape of a heart and I thought of you, so I put it in a box and I'm giving it to you." Guys, we do stuff like that.

    39:13-39:14

And we're excited to do it.

    39:15-39:15

    Why?

    39:15-39:16

    Why do we do that?

    39:18-39:19

    Because we love her.

    39:20-39:20

    Right?

    39:20-39:21

    We love her.

    39:21-39:29

So giving is just like, "Oh, I love, I just love, I was just thinking about you today and I got this for you.

    39:31-39:36

It wasn't, you know, I bought you something else this week so that should buy me some more time in the relationship, right?

    39:37-39:39

I'm giving it because I love you.

    39:40-39:54

Sadly, men, I'm speaking to you especially sadly over time, that I give because I love turns into I give out of obligation.

    39:56-39:57

    Our anniversary's coming up.

    39:57-39:58

    I completely forgot.

    40:01-40:02

    What do you want?

    40:02-40:03

What do you want for your anniversary?

    40:03-40:05

Are we exchanging gifts this year for our anniversary?

    40:06-40:06

    What do you want?

    40:07-40:11

And it becomes this like chore that you forget about.

    40:11-40:16

Meanwhile, at the beginning of the relationship, you're celebrating like, it's our two hour anniversary, so I bought you this.

    40:17-40:20

Here's a gold necklace for our five day anniversary.

    40:20-40:26

And here this woman has put up with you for 15 years, and you forgot.

    40:28-40:29

But you understand the point, right?

    40:29-40:39

When you love, a natural outpouring of that love is loving to give to the person that you love.

    40:42-40:44

That's how it is with God.

    40:46-40:50

See we give because we love God.

    40:53-40:57

And if we don't love God, we're not going to feel inclined to give.

    40:59-41:08

If we're not constantly on fire in our walk with the Lord, we're going to have that tendency to drift like in the human relationships.

    41:09-41:17

We're going to have that tendency to drift from "I give to missions because I love God and I want to see His kingdom advance." We drift to "Oh, it's time for the offering.

    41:18-41:23

I guess I should probably give something." The love is cold.

    41:25-41:25

    The giving is stale.

    41:28-41:30

And you miss what it means to be a steward.

    41:33-41:39

The ultimate example, obviously, of giving, because of love, is from God.

    41:42-41:44

Everybody in here knows John 3.16, right?

    41:45-41:46

    Help me out.

    41:46-41:52

"For God so loved the world." So God loved the world.

    41:52-41:56

And because God loved this world, the people, obviously, right?

    41:56-42:00

Because God loved the people in this world so much, what did he do?

    42:00-42:03

For God so loved the world, he, he what?

    42:04-42:05

    He gave.

    42:07-42:11

Giving was a natural expression of God's love.

    42:12-42:18

As Christians, giving is a natural expression of our love for God.

    42:20-42:31

That we've moved on from, I give because I should, to, "I love to give, and I give because I love." Let's pray.
