  • 00:40-00:47

Father, we've already studied in this part of your Word that we're not just to hear the Word, but we're to do the Word.

    00:48-01:02

And I pray, Father, you would give us the faith, you would give us the power to do what your Word says.

    01:05-01:07

Glorify your name above all things.

    01:08-01:11

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

    01:12-01:14

James chapter four, are you there?

    01:17-01:21

Well, several months ago, I had two little boys come into my office.

    01:22-01:25

They were at the church with their mom, and I'm not gonna say their names.

    01:26-01:27

A lot of you probably know who they are.

    01:28-01:31

But one is seven and one is four.

    01:31-01:33

So I'm just gonna refer to them by their ages.

    01:33-01:34

    Is that all right?

    01:35-02:10

So they come into my office and they point to the chairs in front of my desk and they say, "What are these chairs for?" And I said, "Well, those are for counseling." And they're like, "Well, what's that?" I said, "Well, sometimes people have problems with something and they come to me and I tell them what the Bible says about how to fix their problems." And the one little boy said, "Well, we need counseling." I said, "All right, hop on up." So the seven-year-old sat here, the four-year-old sat here.

    02:12-02:25

And I said to the seven-year-old, I said, "All right, what seems to be the problem?" And he said, "Well, he hits me and he calls me names." Like, all right.

    02:26-02:33

And I turned to the four-year-old and I said, "Then what do you think the problem is?" And he got real sheepish, kind of slumped back in his seat.

    02:33-02:48

and he got this little grin on his face, and he goes, "Well, he hits me, "and he calls me names." And as soon as he said that, the seven-year-old goes, "You're a liar!"

    02:50-02:50

    (congregation laughing)

    02:51-02:52

Well, he was more intense than that.

    02:52-03:02

And I said, "All right, all right." So I shared with him, "What does the Bible say?" And we talked about that for a while.

    03:02-03:06

And I said, "Now, do you think Jesus would want us "to be kind to one another?

    03:06-03:11

"Or do you think Jesus would want us "to be mean to one another?" And they agreed, Jesus would want us to be kind to one another.

    03:12-03:15

And I said, "Okay, let's pray." And we prayed.

    03:16-03:26

And after we got done praying, amen, I got up and walked around my desk and they get up off their chairs and the seven-year-old was walking out and the four-year-old walked up behind him.

    03:27-03:36

And he kind of twisted his torso He punched him in the spine, and I mean so hard.

    03:37-03:43

I mean, I never could have imagined a four-year-old could hit that hard.

    03:44-03:49

He hit him so hard, and the seven-year-old went face down on the ground.

    03:49-03:58

And you know in those moments how time kind of stands still, all I could think of was, "How am I going to explain this to Mom?" Right?

    03:59-04:16

"What were you guys doing in there?" the seven-year-old rolled over and he goes, "Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!" And I'm like, "All right, out, out, go, go!" Because that's how counseling goes a lot.

    04:17-04:28

We all agree while we're sitting in the chair and then we get our backside off the chair and we go right back to doing the thing that we shouldn't be doing.

    04:30-04:34

Can't we all just get along?

    04:36-04:38

    No, no, we cannot.

    04:41-04:49

That's all mankind has been doing since the second generation from Cain and Abel until today.

    04:50-04:52

    All we do is fight.

    04:53-04:57

I mean, you name it, we fight about it, right?

    04:58-04:59

    We fight about land.

    05:01-05:05

We fight about the right to murder babies before they're born.

    05:07-05:09

    We fight about skin color.

    05:11-05:14

We fight about Tickle Me Elmo.

    05:16-05:19

I worked retail the year that thing came out.

    05:19-05:27

I kid you not, there were people fist fighting in the aisle on Black Friday over Tickle Me Elmo.

    05:28-05:29

    (congregation laughing)

    05:33-05:35

And when we fight, we say, "Yeah, you know what?

    05:35-05:37

"Yeah, we shouldn't be fighting, but you know what?

    05:37-05:42

"I'm in the right, and that person's wrong, "and that's why we're fighting.

    05:42-05:45

"He's wrong!" And it's always the other guy's fault, right?

    05:46-05:51

Every fight that you're in, it's always the other guy's fault, isn't it?

    05:52-05:52

    Isn't it?

    05:56-05:56

    Isn't it?

    05:57-06:03

James chapter four, he says in verse one, "What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you?

    06:03-06:12

"Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?" It's always the other guy's fault, right?

    06:12-06:16

Well, James says, "No, it's your fault.

    06:19-06:28

"You're the problem." You're like, "All right, so if I'm the problem," which that's what God said, okay, I'm the problem.

    06:28-06:34

If I am the problem, how do I play nice with the people that I'm sharing this space with?

    06:35-06:38

I'm so glad you asked, because that's where James takes us.

    06:38-06:41

On your outline, I want you to write some things down, how to play well with others.

    06:44-06:45

How to play well with others.

    06:47-06:49

    Number one, write this down.

    06:50-06:52

    Stop being so self-centered.

    06:53-06:55

    Stop being so self-centered.

    06:57-06:59

    Like, why do we fight?

    07:00-07:02

    Why are we constantly fighting?

    07:03-07:05

Well, James tells us again, look at verse one.

    07:05-07:13

He says, "Is it not this, "that your passions are at war within you?" The problem is you.

    07:14-07:18

The problem specifically is your heart, according to James.

    07:19-07:28

He's saying we're at war without because we are at war within.

    07:30-07:31

    What does that mean?

    07:32-07:34

Well, he explains, look at verse two.

    07:35-07:39

He says, "You desire and do not have, so you murder.

    07:40-07:48

You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel." James says, "You want something.

    07:49-07:53

You will stoop to any level to get what you want.

    07:55-07:57

    And you're like, murder, wow.

    07:58-08:01

Talk about coming out of the gate hot, murder.

    08:02-08:02

    Like, really?

    08:04-08:05

    Yeah, murder.

    08:08-08:21

Do you think anyone has ever killed someone because they wanted something that they had or because they wanted someone that they had?

    08:25-08:30

He's there again, fight and quarrel, fight and quarrel.

    08:30-08:32

    James says it's selfishness.

    08:33-08:35

You can go back to Harvest Academy right now.

    08:36-08:38

And I bet you there are two toddlers fighting over a toy.

    08:41-08:45

And you know what church, if we're honest, We don't grow out of that.

    08:51-08:52

Look at the rest of verse two.

    08:53-08:55

One of the most convicting verses in the whole Bible.

    08:56-09:07

He says, "You do not have because you do not ask." So let me ask you, who has promised to supply everything you need?

    09:07-09:08

If you know the answer, shout it out.

    09:09-09:11

Who has promised to supply everything you need?

    09:12-09:13

    God, right?

    09:13-09:14

    God has.

    09:17-09:22

So, why don't we go to him?

    09:27-09:39

"We don't have what we want," James says, "because we don't go to God." And I have to ask you a question that I've had to ask myself many times.

    09:42-09:50

How many blessings have you forfeited in your life simply because you haven't asked God for it?

    09:54-09:56

And you're like, "Hang on." You're like, "Hang on there, preacher boy.

    09:57-09:57

    "I have asked.

    09:59-09:59

    "I have asked.

    10:00-10:02

"And why didn't God give me what I wanted?

    10:03-10:07

"Because I've asked." Well, look at verse three.

    10:08-10:18

He says, "You ask and do not receive "because you ask wrongly to spend it on your passions." Ouch.

    10:18-10:31

James says, "You've asked wrongly." You're like, "Well, how can you ask wrongly?" He says, "You ask wrongly because you just wanna spend it on your passions." In other words, you're praying with a selfish motive.

    10:35-10:37

Now, listen, I don't want anybody to misunderstand me.

    10:39-10:42

Jesus said, "Ask and seek and knock," right?

    10:42-10:52

Jesus said, "Ask and you shall receive." Jesus said, John 15, "Abide in him "and ask whatever you wish and you'll receive." All of that is true.

    10:55-11:04

But if you're asking for something purely for selfish reasons, God is not listening.

    11:06-11:07

    (congregation laughing)

    11:09-11:10

    Have you ever done that?

    11:12-11:13

    I mean, let's be honest.

    11:14-11:21

That you're like, God, God, please give me that promotion so that people are gonna start respecting me.

    11:24-11:25

    That's a selfish motive.

    11:27-11:34

If you're like, God, I wanna be with this person, I wanna be with that girl, God, make it happen.

    11:36-11:38

Maybe you're asking for a selfish motive.

    11:40-11:51

Or what if I said, "God, I want you to grow this church "so that I can be the pastor of the biggest church "in the neighborhood." Wouldn't you say that's a selfish motive?

    11:54-11:58

If you're like, "God, please, please, please, please, "God, let me win the lottery.

    11:59-12:02

"I don't play the lottery, but somehow, God."

    12:02-12:03

    (congregation laughing)

    12:04-12:06

You do miracles and let me win the lottery.

    12:06-12:07

    Why, why, why?

    12:09-12:11

    It's a selfish motive, isn't it?

    12:12-12:18

The bottom line, James says, you aren't playing well with others because of your selfish heart.

    12:19-12:20

    That's what he's saying.

    12:23-12:37

When all you care about is what you want, you will do whatever you think is necessary to get what you want and you will fight whoever is in the way of what you want.

    12:39-12:40

    Self-centered living destroys.

    12:41-12:46

It destroys you, it destroys others, and it destroys your relationship with others.

    12:49-12:51

Like, man, what's the solution to that?

    12:52-12:53

    There's only one solution.

    12:54-12:56

There's only one solution and that's number two.

    12:57-12:58

    Get right with God.

    12:59-13:03

"right with God." Look at verse four.

    13:04-13:10

He says, "You adulterous people, "do you not know that friendship with the world "is enmity with God?

    13:11-13:31

"Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world "makes himself an enemy of God." James says, "Listen, you got a problem with your heart "because you got a problem with God." Now, primarily, he is addressing unbelievers.

    13:31-13:38

That's clear from the language he's using, but there's stuff here for all of us in this passage.

    13:40-13:43

We've talked about last week, me first, wisdom.

    13:43-13:47

We talked about selfish ambition and the thoughts continuing here.

    13:48-13:51

He's calling it friendship with the world.

    13:51-13:52

    It's called worldliness.

    13:54-13:59

And that is when you love the things of this world more than you love God.

    14:01-14:01

    That's worldliness.

    14:02-14:13

And James says, "When you do that, you are making yourself an enemy of God." Now look at verse five.

    14:15-14:16

    This is an interesting verse.

    14:16-14:31

It says, "Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the scripture says, 'He yearns jealously over the Spirit that he has made to dwell in us." Now that is not a direct Old Testament quote.

    14:32-14:35

What James is doing here, he's paraphrasing.

    14:37-14:45

What he's doing is he's saying, "Hey, have you read the scriptures?" Do you know if you read the scriptures, they say that God is jealous for you.

    14:50-14:56

In the Old Testament, forsaking God was compared to spiritual adultery.

    14:58-15:00

You see, Israel belonged to God.

    15:01-15:13

So when Israel would forsake God for idols, God compared that to a wife being unfaithful to her husband by being with another man.

    15:14-15:21

That's what the whole book of Hosea is about in the Old Testament, by the way, but it comes up a lot in the Old Testament, that God says he is jealous.

    15:23-15:25

Jealousy is a right to ownership.

    15:26-15:32

It's the way a husband feels when another man is after his wife.

    15:33-15:37

And that kind of jealousy is appropriate, by the way.

    15:38-15:42

But notice James here says, "Look, you're adulterous.

    15:43-15:43

    "You're adulterous.

    15:44-15:49

"You're unfaithful to God "because you love the things of the world "more than you love God.

    15:50-15:56

"That's a problem." And in verse five, James is saying, "This is serious.

    15:57-16:01

"Don't you remember that the Old Testament says "God is jealous for his people?

    16:02-16:05

"Do you really wanna fire up that emotion in God?

    16:05-16:26

"Do you wanna do that?" You know, if I were to see a man flirting with my wife, sending her provocative or suggestive messages, sending your gifts, we are going to have a serious problem.

    16:28-16:30

You don't want to fire up jealousy in a man.

    16:31-16:33

God says he is jealous for his people.

    16:33-16:35

And James is saying, do you really want to fire that up?

    16:35-16:36

    Really?

    16:36-16:37

Is that what you want to do?

    16:37-16:39

You want to fire up the jealousy of God?

    16:42-16:43

    Not smart.

    16:46-16:47

    So wake up call.

    16:48-16:51

James says you need to get real in your walk with God through Christ.

    16:51-16:52

    That's what he's doing here.

    16:52-16:54

    Wake up, wake up.

    16:55-16:56

    Look at verse six.

    16:56-17:00

This is a direct quote, where he says, "But he gives more grace.

    17:02-17:14

"Therefore it says," here's the quote, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." That's quoting Proverbs 3:34.

    17:16-17:22

Listen, the only way you get to God is through God's grace.

    17:25-17:30

And the only way that you receive God's grace is through humility.

    17:35-17:38

And I have to ask you, church, have you humbled yourself?

    17:40-17:41

    Have you humbled yourself?

    17:44-17:49

Humility is one of them terms that we use a lot, but do we really understand what it means?

    17:50-17:56

Like, does that mean I just walk around and like think bad things about myself?

    17:56-17:56

    No.

    17:58-18:01

You're like, well, I'm not really sure what it means.

    18:01-18:08

Well, according to this, God gives grace to the humble, so you better be sure what it means.

    18:09-18:14

And fortunately for us, James tells us what it means to humble yourself.

    18:16-18:21

So on your outline, under number two, four things I must do to humble myself.

    18:23-18:27

I can't overstate how important this is.

    18:28-18:34

These are four things you must do, four things I must do to humble myself.

    18:35-18:37

Letter A, I must submit to God.

    18:39-18:40

    Look at verse seven.

    18:42-18:44

He says, "Submit yourselves therefore to God.

    18:45-18:47

"Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

    18:48-18:57

"Draw near to God and he will draw near to you." Like, man, I hear that last verse.

    18:57-18:58

You're like, wow, I wanna draw near.

    19:00-19:01

I wanna draw near to God.

    19:01-19:03

Well, he says, "Then you have to submit.

    19:04-19:12

"You have to." You know, so often in the church, Jesus Christ is presented simply as Savior.

    19:14-19:17

And people want to receive Jesus as Savior, but not as Lord.

    19:18-19:20

Can he be my ticket out of hell, please?

    19:20-19:22

Can he be my ticket to heaven, please?

    19:22-19:24

But I don't really want him telling me how to live.

    19:25-19:26

And that deal's not on the table.

    19:27-19:28

He is Savior and he is Lord.

    19:31-19:32

    That's why he says submit.

    19:35-19:37

By nature, we submit to the devil.

    19:40-21:01

And coming to Christ means changing who's Lord of your life. Like, "Oh, what about the devil?" Look at this again. It says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." Resist the devil. Notice it doesn't say, "Rebuke the devil." You hear that a lot, right? "You're gonna rebuke the devil! You know, I just rebuke the devil and like I'm sorry where did you get that I hear people say you're gonna we're gonna rebuke the devil what are you rebuke the devil do you realize who he is the Bible never tells you to rebuke the devil Bible says to resist the devil. He resists the devil, right? I think some people give the devil more attention than they give God. That's another sermon. It says resist him, ignore him, shut him out, pay no attention to him. Right? You know how it works with people, right? If somebody's trying to bother you and you keep giving them attention, and they're gonna keep bothering you because they realize they're under your skin and they have your attention and they're just gonna...

    21:02-21:10

But if somebody's trying to annoy you and you just completely ignore them, eventually they get to the place where they're like, I'm wasting my time.

    21:10-21:11

He ain't even listening to me.

    21:11-21:12

    This isn't even any fun.

    21:13-21:15

And they go annoy someone else.

    21:15-21:17

And the Bible says, that's what the devil does.

    21:17-21:20

You resist him, he flees from you.

    21:23-21:25

I love this where it says, I'm drawn near to God.

    21:27-21:27

    Do you see that?

    21:27-21:28

    Drawn near.

    21:30-21:31

    Drawn near to God.

    21:32-21:33

Like, how do I do that?

    21:36-21:37

    Time in his word.

    21:39-21:40

    Fasting.

    21:42-21:42

    Prayer.

    21:45-21:50

I think one of the biggest ways that we are to draw near to God that I think often gets downplayed is worship.

    21:53-21:57

You know, we come together to sing these songs.

    21:57-22:01

It's not like we're auditioning for some choir.

    22:02-22:04

    Why do we do that?

    22:05-22:13

Because when you get a peek of what's happening in heaven in Revelation, what, four and five, when you get a curtain opened, you get a peek into heaven, what do you see?

    22:14-22:19

You see everyone around the throne worshiping.

    22:20-22:21

    God.

    22:23-22:26

You know, that's what I love to do here during worship.

    22:26-22:30

I love to just sort of close my eyes and imagine myself in that scene.

    22:30-22:32

Because I'm gonna be in that scene someday.

    22:32-22:37

So I imagine like, I'm like rehearsing for that, in a sense.

    22:37-22:45

But I'm around his throne, and I'm telling God exactly what I think about him.

    22:46-22:49

That is a way that we draw near to God.

    22:52-22:54

And attached to that is a beautiful promise.

    22:57-23:05

It says, "Draw near to God and he will draw near to you." Love that promise.

    23:07-23:09

Because it's risky to draw near to someone, isn't it?

    23:10-23:10

    It's risky.

    23:13-23:14

Because what if they reject you?

    23:16-23:20

What if I want to draw near to someone and they don't want anything to do with me.

    23:22-23:23

    That's a horrible feeling.

    23:26-23:30

And here James gives the promise, sort of like the prodigal son's dad, right?

    23:31-23:34

Soon as that kid was on the way home, dad was running to meet him.

    23:36-23:37

    Same promise here.

    23:37-23:41

Listen, you take the first step to God and he'll meet you there.

    23:44-23:46

Are you willing to take the first step?

    23:49-23:51

Four things I must do to humble myself.

    23:51-23:55

Letter B, I must repent from my sin.

    23:57-24:00

Not only do you have to submit, look at verse eight, you have to repent.

    24:01-24:21

He says, second part of verse eight, "Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." He says, "Cleanse your hands." What are you doing right now in your life that you know dishonors God?

    24:22-24:24

    You know what it is.

    24:25-24:26

    Don't shout it out.

    24:27-24:29

But what is that thing right now in your life?

    24:29-24:35

You're like, I've been involved in this, I've been doing this, and I know that that's not right.

    24:39-24:39

    Well, stop it.

    24:42-24:44

Replace it with doing what does honor God.

    24:45-24:46

    Right?

    24:46-24:48

    Like our Thai missionary Barnabas.

    24:48-24:49

    I love this.

    24:49-24:59

Barnabas told me one time, one of the men in one of the villages was having a relationship with a woman that is, how shall we say, inappropriate.

    25:00-25:14

And Barnabas goes to the man and he says, "You need to stop this relationship right now." And the man said, "You know, I'm gonna pray about that." And Barnabas said, "No, there is nothing to pray about.

    25:15-25:15

    Repent.

    25:17-25:19

No, this is not a pray thing.

    25:19-25:26

This is a repent thing." He's right.

    25:26-25:31

"Cleanse your hands." He also says, "Purify your hearts." Purify your hearts.

    25:32-25:34

Your favorite sin, what's your favorite sin?

    25:36-25:39

That sin that you just love the most, you need to hate it.

    25:40-25:41

You need to see it for what it is.

    25:41-25:43

And that takes us to the letter C.

    25:44-25:45

Four things I must do to humble myself.

    25:46-25:47

I must mourn over my sinfulness.

    25:48-25:50

Look at verse nine, dial in here.

    25:52-25:57

Verse nine, he says, "Be wretched and mourn and weep.

    25:59-26:04

"Let your laughter be turned to mourning "and your joy to gloom."

    26:06-26:06

    (congregation laughing)

    26:10-26:13

No one ever talks about this.

    26:16-26:22

Like when's the last time you heard anybody talk about mourning over your sin?

    26:23-26:24

    Nobody talks about that.

    26:27-26:29

It's like, get over it, move on, shed that burden.

    26:32-26:36

Listen, this is a key element in coming to Christ.

    26:38-26:40

    It's mourning over your sin.

    26:42-26:49

It's realizing how ugly and disgusting your sin is.

    26:51-26:53

Seeing it for what it is.

    26:54-27:00

He says your laughter, turn it to mourning, your joy, turn it to gloom, laughter and joy.

    27:00-27:02

    That's how sinners view sin.

    27:03-27:06

    It's laughter and joy, right?

    27:07-27:10

Ha ha ha, hee hee, high five, so funny.

    27:11-27:15

Who I slept with, who I ripped off, who I humiliated, hee hee hee.

    27:16-27:17

    The things that I've watched.

    27:19-27:21

Heaven help me, the things that I've laughed at.

    27:24-27:30

James says the sin that you used to brag about, the sin that you used to celebrate.

    27:33-27:35

You gotta see it for what it is.

    27:35-27:37

And when you do, it'll crush you.

    27:43-27:45

Have you mourned over your sin?

    27:47-27:48

I mean, have you ever done that?

    27:49-28:00

Have you ever just sat down and looked at your own selfish sinfulness and just mourned.

    28:00-28:01

    Have you done that?

    28:08-28:14

If you ever sat down and considered, who has my sin hurt?

    28:19-28:24

People that I've been intimate with and discarded because I got what I wanted.

    28:27-28:32

people who have trusted me and I've lied to them and I've ripped them off.

    28:35-28:38

My life, my life has been about me.

    28:41-28:45

Making myself happy, doing whatever it takes to get what I want.

    28:48-28:50

    Using people.

    28:52-28:55

What kind of legacy is that?

    29:01-29:13

Maybe it's not just mourning the sins that you've committed, but mourning the sins that result from what you didn't do.

    29:19-29:25

You know, I look at my wife and I think how often I've failed to be the husband that she's needed me to be.

    29:27-29:40

And I look at my kids, I look at my two sons and I'm like, I haven't been the dad that you've always needed me to be.

    29:42-29:51

Because I make some pathetic excuse, I'm too tired, I'm too distracted, I'm too annoyed, I'm too selfish, and sinful is my problem.

    29:51-29:51

    That's my problem.

    29:53-29:54

Have you mourned over your sin?

    29:57-30:08

And I just flip through life, and I do whatever the heck I wanna do, and I disregard my creator, oh, until I need something, and then I pretend to be real religious.

    30:15-30:22

And I think of Jesus Christ, innocent of any wrongdoing.

    30:25-30:40

But he came and was willing to die in my place, and not just die, to suffer the most horrible, painful, humiliating death known to man.

    30:41-30:50

spit on and mocked and beaten and nailed to a cross and hung to die slowly so people could still mock him.

    30:53-30:55

Not for anything that he did.

    30:56-30:58

He did all that because of what I've done.

    31:01-31:11

While Jesus was on the cross, he literally experienced the pain of hell as he bore the wrath of God that I deserve.

    31:17-31:24

Can you really take such an inventory and not mourn?

    31:28-31:29

    Have you done that?

    31:37-31:39

What are the things I must do to humble myself?

    31:41-31:43

    Letter D, I must receive God's grace.

    31:53-31:54

    I must receive God's grace.

    31:54-31:55

    Look at verse 10.

    31:59-32:01

All in favor of some good news right now?

    32:03-32:04

    Oh, nobody.

    32:06-32:07

Well, you're in the wrong place because here it comes.

    32:08-32:12

Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will exalt you.

    32:15-32:16

    I must receive God's grace.

    32:16-32:20

I'm not trying to earn God's favor by works or behavior.

    32:20-32:26

I realize because of my sin and my selfishness, how hopeless I am.

    32:26-32:35

Like the passage Taylor read earlier from Isaiah six, I'm a horrible, gross garbage person and I live among garbage people.

    32:42-32:43

    And that humbles me.

    32:45-32:51

And I cry out for His mercy that He has shown me through Jesus Christ.

    32:52-32:53

    And here's the good news.

    32:54-33:00

When you truly humble yourself, when you really humble yourself, God doesn't pile on.

    33:02-33:03

    Isn't that awesome?

    33:04-33:21

That it's not like you say, "God, God, I am such a miserable person "and I realize how sinful I am "and I realize all the people that I've hurt "and I realize, God, how I've just completely "blasphemed your name." It's not like God's like, "That's right, that's right.

    33:21-33:24

"You are trash, you are worthless." That's not what it says.

    33:25-33:33

It says, "He will exalt you." When you humble yourself, God is in the business of lifting up.

    33:33-33:34

He wants to lift you up.

    33:37-33:39

But you're not gonna be lifted up until you get down.

    33:43-33:45

So you wanna play well with others?

    33:46-33:49

Well, there's one person you better make sure that you're getting along with.

    33:52-33:56

The very top of the list, and that's God himself.

    33:59-34:04

because it's only when you're right with Him that you can be right with others.

    34:09-34:10

Finally, how to play well with others.

    34:12-34:14

    Number three, stop slandering.

    34:19-34:21

I really wish the sermon was done here.

    34:22-34:23

    So I feel done.

    34:24-34:25

But this is part of it.

    34:26-34:34

So I really wish that I could, this could be like its own sermon.

    34:36-34:38

    Maybe it will someday.

    34:39-34:40

    Number three, stop slandering.

    34:42-34:43

Stop slandering, look at verse 11.

    34:43-34:52

He says, "Do not speak evil against one another, brothers." Oh, more of that watching your mouth, right?

    34:52-34:54

Taylor just, what was that, two weeks ago?

    34:55-34:55

    That was a good sermon.

    34:56-34:57

    Watching your mouth, right?

    34:58-35:01

Matthew 12, 34, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

    35:02-35:06

Every time you speak, you're just showing what's in your heart.

    35:06-35:12

Then James goes back to the mouth again, and here he's talking about slander.

    35:13-35:17

Speaking evil against one another, that's slander.

    35:23-35:30

So much destruction in God's church just comes from slander.

    35:31-35:32

    Like, well, what is it?

    35:33-35:46

Slander is when you talk about people in a way that makes the person that you're talking to think badly about the person you're talking about.

    35:47-35:48

    That's what slander is.

    35:49-35:50

    It's hurting someone's reputation.

    35:50-36:00

It's talking about someone in a way that drags them down in the eyes of someone else and making somebody think less of another person by the way that you're talking about them.

    36:00-36:01

    That's slander.

    36:03-36:05

Like, hey, can you believe what a jerk he is?

    36:05-36:07

Let me tell you the stuff that he did.

    36:08-36:10

Can you believe the stuff that she said?

    36:10-36:11

    She's such a nasty person.

    36:11-36:12

    Can you believe?

    36:13-36:13

    Can you believe?

    36:13-36:15

    You can't trust her.

    36:17-36:24

All these things that we say tear somebody down in the eyes of another.

    36:24-36:25

    It's slander.

    36:28-36:29

You're like, is it really that big of a deal?

    36:32-36:38

Well, there is nothing that you can do that's more satanic than slander.

    36:41-36:45

Because you go to Revelation 12, Satan is called an accuser and a deceiver.

    36:46-36:51

As an accuser, he goes before God and says, man's no good, man's no good.

    36:51-36:52

    Man's no good.

    36:54-36:55

    That's the accuser.

    36:55-37:03

And then as deceiver, he goes before man and says, "God's no good, God's no good." You see what Satan does?

    37:03-37:04

    That's his thing.

    37:05-37:09

He's just constantly going around telling everybody how bad other people are.

    37:10-37:12

So you wanna be satanic, go ahead.

    37:13-37:15

Talk about other people in a negative way.

    37:21-37:27

I don't recommend it though, because James says, "Here's three things you also say when you slander." I'm gonna go through these quickly.

    37:28-37:34

But when you slander someone, when you're tearing someone down, these are three other things that you're saying.

    37:35-37:47

And maybe you're not mouthing these words, but James is saying, "Here's what you're really saying when you slander." The first thing, when you slander, when you're talking about someone in a negative way, what you're really saying is, "I hate that person." Right?

    37:48-37:50

He says, "You don't speak evil against one another.

    37:50-38:01

Brothers, brothers, he's talking about, specifically in the context of church, specifically we're talking about speaking evil against someone that Jesus died for.

    38:02-38:03

Wanna explain that one to him?

    38:05-38:08

This person that you are commanded to love.

    38:12-38:13

Like, well, how do I know if it's slander?

    38:15-38:16

We've got an easy test for you.

    38:17-38:27

Whenever you're talking about somebody, as soon as you say their name, As soon as you say the person's name, I just want you to imagine that person standing right outside the room and listening to every word you say.

    38:29-38:36

Would they say, "Wow, it sounds like "they really care about me." Or would they say, "Wow, I thought he liked me.

    38:37-38:41

"Wow, wow, that hurts." Just imagine that person's listening.

    38:43-38:49

Because when you slander, you're saying, "I hate that person, let her be." When you slander, you know what else you say?

    38:50-38:55

You say, "God's word means nothing to me." Who wants to sign up for that?

    38:55-39:11

He says, "The one who speaks," verse 11, "The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law." But if you judge the law, you're not a doer of the law, but a judge.

    39:13-39:18

He says, "When you slander someone, you're judging the law." Now, what is God's law about?

    39:19-39:25

Well, according to Galatians 5.14, it says for the whole law is fulfilled in one word.

    39:26-39:28

You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

    39:31-39:36

So when you slander, what you're saying is, you know, God says I should love.

    39:37-39:39

    Eh, I can do that.

    39:39-39:41

I think I'm gonna slander instead.

    39:43-39:45

Because God's word means nothing to me.

    39:47-39:52

And that's how a lot of people treat God's word, by the way, they treat God's word like it's the Chinese buffet, right?

    39:53-39:57

Oh, I'll take the general so's, I'll take the hot and sour soup.

    39:57-40:02

I don't know, I'm not gonna eat the lemon fish wedges or whatever that is.

    40:02-40:06

Oh, but I will take some, I'll take a Chinese donut or five.

    40:10-40:11

That's how some people treat the word of God.

    40:12-40:15

Like, oh yeah, I wouldn't physically murder someone.

    40:15-40:16

    I don't steal.

    40:18-40:21

    Slander, I'm okay doing that.

    40:23-40:24

    You're judging God's word.

    40:25-40:25

    Really?

    40:26-40:29

Pretty arrogant and foolish to treat God's word with such contempt.

    40:31-40:38

And finally, letter C, when you slander, what you're saying is, I should be God.

    40:40-40:42

James doesn't turn it down at all, does he?

    40:43-40:45

Just, he just keeps turning it up.

    40:46-40:47

    Look at verse 12.

    40:48-41:00

He says, "There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy." Now, who is that?

    41:00-41:01

Shout it out if you know.

    41:01-41:02

    Who is that?

    41:03-41:04

It's got, that was a shout?

    41:04-41:06

Come on, if you know, shout it out.

    41:07-41:07

    Yes!

    41:08-41:08

    Wait.

    41:14-41:15

    It's not you?

    41:19-41:24

It's not, oh, huh, according to this, it's not you.

    41:25-41:29

He says, but who are you to judge your neighbor?

    41:31-41:33

James says, who do you think you are?

    41:34-41:36

When you slander, you're putting yourself in the place of God.

    41:37-41:39

You're saying, God, hey, hey, God, off the throne.

    41:39-41:40

    You're sitting in my chair.

    41:45-41:46

Didn't we just talk about humility?

    41:47-41:57

I mean, if the person that you're slandering is really as bad as you're making them out to be, God will deal with them.

    41:59-42:16

But on the other hand, if you're lying about someone or passing on a delicious story about how horrible someone is, or you're embellishing, or you're laying it on thick because you really wanna drag that person down in the eyes of another, what does that say about your heart?

    42:18-42:19

    It says you're hateful.

    42:20-42:21

    That's what it says.

    42:24-42:27

And look, you can't play well with others if you hate them.

    42:29-42:32

And you prove that you hate people when you slander them.

    42:33-42:35

So, if our worship team would make their way forward.

    42:40-42:43

James says, "Can't get along with others?

    42:47-42:57

"It's a heart problem, your heart." Take a hard look in the mirror, it's your heart.

    42:58-43:05

You're selfish, you haven't submitted to God, and you're hateful.

    43:07-43:10

The question is, what are you gonna do about that?

    43:12-43:13

Bow your heads with me, please.

    43:14-43:24

Our Father in heaven, your word certainly crushes us so that you can build us up.

    43:26-43:30

Your word takes us down so that you can exalt us.

    43:30-43:37

And Father, I pray today that your word would take us down.

    43:38-43:42

Face first in the dirt, take us down.

    43:44-43:52

Father, we confess to you that we are people of unclean lips and we dwell among a people of unclean lips.

    43:53-43:57

And we gaze at your holiness and we are crushed.

    43:58-44:07

But so often God, we just wanna get around that part And we want to celebrate the exaltation, but we're not willing to go through the humiliation.

    44:09-44:21

Father, I pray today, through the power of your Spirit, through the hammer that is your Word, you'd break us down.

    44:24-44:35

And as you lift us up, Father, Let us be people in the church, in the workplace, in the home, in the wherever, God.

    44:36-44:39

Let us be people who play well with others.

    44:41-44:43

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read James 4:1-12

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think people would rather fight for what they want than ask God for it (Jas 4:2)?

  3. In Jas 4:3, James says when we ask God for something with selfish motives, He will not answer. How can you tell if what you are asking for comes from a selfish motive or a God-glorifying motive? If you realize you are being selfish in what you are asking for, what should you do? How does this change how you pray?

  4. What does it mean to “humble yourself”? How do you know when you have done that? In what area of “humbling yourself” do you find the most difficult? Why? See Jas 4:7-10.

  5. Why does James talk about slander here? How is slander destructive? What should you do if someone is slandering someone else to you?

Intentional Faith: A "How To" Guide - How to Be Wise

Introduction:

James 1:5 - If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

How to be Wise (James 3:13-18)

  1. Understand what wisdom is. (Jas 3:13)
  2. Know the difference between Me-first wisdom and Godly wisdom. (Jas 3:14-18)

Three questions to ask yourself that will determine what kind of wisdom you live by:

    1. Where does my wisdom come from?
    2. Who is my wisdom meant to benefit?
    3. What is my wisdom producing?
  3. Apply liberally.

Proverbs 15:1 - A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

1 Corinthians 1:30 - ...you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God...

Let's turn to God's word together, James chapter three.

    00:43-00:48

Let's bow our heads, I want you to pray for me and I'll pray for you as we approach God's word together.

    00:52-00:56

All of God's people said, amen, amen.

    00:57-00:58

James chapter three, are you there?

    00:58-00:59

We're gonna be picking up in verse 13.

    01:02-01:07

When my family lived in Chicago, we were broke.

    01:09-01:17

We were training with the fellowship, the church planting training, and we tried to sell our house before we moved, but the house didn't sell.

    01:18-01:24

So all of the money we got from the fellowship went right to paying our mortgage back here.

    01:25-01:28

So we had, that season of our lives, we just had no money.

    01:30-01:41

And to tell you how bad, it wasn't funny then, it's kind of funny now, but to tell you how bad it was, I needed a haircut so bad, but we couldn't afford it.

    01:43-01:44

    And I was a wreck.

    01:45-01:46

    I really looked bad.

    01:46-01:47

    I mean, really bad.

    01:47-01:52

And I was driving the one day and I saw there was this place there was a neon sign in the window.

    01:53-01:54

    It said $5 haircuts.

    01:55-01:58

    I'm like $5 haircuts.

    01:59-02:03

So we scrimped and we saved and we tightened the belt.

    02:03-02:05

And we came up with that $5.

    02:07-02:09

And I went to this place to get my hair cut.

    02:09-02:20

And I sit down in the chair and I said to the lady, "You know, I want it really short around the sides and back, you can leave a little on top, but quite a bit needs taken off the top.

    02:20-02:24

But just, you know, leave some on top." And she pulls out the electric clipper.

    02:24-02:35

She's like, "Eh." And she was like, "Brrr." And I was like, "No, no, no, no, no, no." And then I realized she didn't speak English.

    02:38-02:40

But she did kind of burp in my face the whole time.

    02:40-02:42

And that was a whole different story.

    02:43-02:44

I'll tell you that one later.

    02:46-02:47

But she got done with me.

    02:47-02:50

And look, some people can pull off the shaved head thing.

    02:51-02:52

I am not one of those people.

    02:53-02:56

I looked like Curly from the Three Stooges.

    02:57-03:12

So I was like one part so like frustrated after this ordeal and one part so just dejected I guess is the word.

    03:14-03:17

And I went up to the counter to pay and there was nobody standing there.

    03:17-03:20

I just went up there and like, I was defeated.

    03:20-03:28

I pulled out, you know, the only $5 we had to our family name And this man comes around from behind the corner.

    03:28-03:30

I don't know if he's the manager or the owner or what.

    03:30-03:38

He just comes from around the corner and he goes, "Ha ha, senority!" I'm like, "Just take my $5." I'm outta here.

    03:39-03:45

You're like, "What's the point of this story?" Well, I learned a valuable lesson.

    03:47-03:53

When it comes to haircuts, it matters where you get it.

    03:54-03:54

    Right?

    03:55-03:56

It matters where you get it.

    03:56-03:57

Now hold that thought for a second.

    03:58-04:02

Look at James chapter three, verse 13.

    04:02-04:10

James says, "Who is wise and understanding among you?" Stop there.

    04:11-04:12

    He asked the question.

    04:13-04:14

Sort of like show of hands.

    04:15-04:21

We're not gonna do this now, but James says, "Okay, who here is wise?

    04:22-04:23

    Who is understanding?

    04:26-04:33

And the problem with asking that question and just kind of leaving it there is everyone thinks they're wise.

    04:35-04:38

But obviously everyone is not wise.

    04:40-04:42

Do I have to sell you on that?

    04:43-04:45

    That everyone is not wise?

    04:45-04:47

I really don't need to sell you on that, do I?

    04:47-04:49

Okay, we'll just move on then.

    04:53-04:56

    with wisdom, just like haircuts.

    04:58-04:59

It matters where you get it.

    05:02-05:03

And that's what we're gonna talk about today.

    05:05-05:06

    We're gonna talk about wisdom.

    05:08-05:11

And write down on your outline, it matters where you get it.

    05:11-05:12

Just write that down at the top.

    05:12-05:14

It matters where you get it.

    05:15-05:19

Because if you miss that, you've missed everything, according to God's word.

    05:21-05:22

    But what is wisdom?

    05:22-05:23

    I like this definition.

    05:23-05:33

I was looking up definitions this week and this definition was, wisdom is the capacity of the mind that allows us to understand life from God's perspective.

    05:35-05:35

    I like that.

    05:36-05:49

It's taking his word, the commands and the principles in his word and understanding them in such a way that we are completely bought in.

    05:50-05:51

    That's wisdom.

    05:53-05:54

But I can tell you something about wisdom, right?

    05:54-06:04

Okay, 'cause right now, I know some people might be tuning out, be like, "Oh, another sermon about wisdom, "and didn't we talk about this before?" And it comes up a lot in James.

    06:05-06:09

I cannot overstate enough how important wisdom is.

    06:10-06:18

Listen, wisdom is the most important thing there is on this earth.

    06:19-06:24

Because if you get wisdom, you'll get everything else.

    06:27-06:28

    It's the most important thing.

    06:30-06:37

Do you remember back in 1 Kings 3, the Lord appeared to Solomon and said, "I'll give you whatever you want." What a blank check.

    06:37-06:41

The God of the universe says, "I'll give you whatever you want." Do you remember what Solomon asked for?

    06:41-06:42

    What did he ask for?

    06:42-06:43

Shout it out if you know.

    06:44-06:44

    Wisdom, right?

    06:46-06:51

and with wisdom, Solomon got everything else.

    06:53-06:59

And we already learned in James that, we learned like Solomon that God is the source of wisdom.

    07:02-07:23

James 1.5 says, "If any of you lacks wisdom, "let him ask God, who gives generously to all "without reproach, and it will be given him." See, everyone thinks they're wise, but obviously everyone is not wise.

    07:24-07:30

And James says, "Who is wise and understanding among you?" It matters where you get it.

    07:32-07:35

So on your outline today, how to be wise.

    07:37-07:38

    How to be wise.

    07:39-07:47

A, you have to, before we could get wisdom, we better understand what wisdom is, right?

    07:48-07:51

Otherwise we might be trying to chase down something that isn't wisdom.

    07:52-07:54

So letter A, understand what wisdom is.

    07:54-07:57

So he asked the question, who is wise and understanding among you?

    07:58-08:05

Another way of saying this is, it's like Solomon is saying, hey, who here is the master of knowing how to live?

    08:06-08:08

    Who's the specialist here?

    08:08-08:09

    Who gets it?

    08:09-08:11

Like who's really nailed it down?

    08:11-08:16

Like what it means to live a successful life?

    08:17-08:42

And you ask that question and right now, I'm sure there are people sitting here, there are people watching this stream, and I say, "Who here is wise?" I'm sure there are people here that are like, "I'm too shy to holler out, but I am." You know, I have this degree, I went to the school of hard knocks or what I'm, but I'm really wise.

    08:44-08:45

    Well, look at verse 13.

    08:45-09:08

He says, "By his good conduct, "let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom." James says, "You got godly wisdom and understanding?" He goes, "It's up to you to show it." And see, this is a command in the Greek.

    09:08-09:13

He's like, "You wise?" He's like, "Show me, show it, demonstrate it.

    09:13-09:15

"Don't just tell me you're wise.

    09:16-09:23

"You have to prove that you're wise by your action." And see, this is where we get wisdom and knowledge mixed up.

    09:25-09:27

Wisdom and knowledge are two different things.

    09:29-09:38

And I say, church, we live in a day that the difference between wisdom and knowledge is more obvious than it's ever been in history.

    09:40-09:41

Here's what I mean by that.

    09:42-09:44

    Knowledge is just information.

    09:44-09:46

    That's all knowledge is, right?

    09:46-09:48

And we have access now to all the knowledge in the world.

    09:49-09:55

Right now, if I said to you, "Hey, who played Clark Griswold's mother "in Christmas Vacation?

    09:55-10:01

"What was that actress's name?" You could tell me in like 15 seconds, couldn't you?

    10:02-10:07

Or if I said, "Hey, what are the lyrics to Dancing Queen?" Some of you probably know them by heart.

    10:09-10:11

And I applaud you for that, I guess.

    10:11-10:16

But you could, if you didn't, you could tell me in a few seconds, right?

    10:17-10:18

    That's knowledge.

    10:20-10:21

    We all have that.

    10:22-10:24

But do you know what I don't see?

    10:25-10:27

And I'm seeing, or maybe I should say it this way.

    10:27-10:33

I am seeing it less and less and less and less and less as the years go on, as I'm seeing real wisdom.

    10:33-10:34

    I'm just not seeing it.

    10:36-10:44

Like for example, in relationships, when it comes to conflict resolution, we don't know how to do that.

    10:44-10:46

Like, can I just text an apology?

    10:46-10:55

To sit down and have a hard conversation with someone, that takes wisdom and we've lost that.

    10:57-10:59

    Or managing money, right?

    11:00-11:05

That is an aspect of wisdom, and we don't know how to do that.

    11:05-11:08

We don't know how to manage God's stuff.

    11:12-11:13

    We're controlling your temper.

    11:18-11:19

We don't know how to do that.

    11:21-11:30

You see, movie actors and song titles and all that secular stuff, that's trivial.

    11:30-11:37

But you know, when it comes to relationships and money and self-control, those are things that the Bible addresses.

    11:40-11:43

So you see, wisdom isn't just the knowledge.

    11:43-11:49

Wisdom is taking the knowledge from God's word and knowing how to apply it.

    11:51-11:58

But it's not just knowing how to apply it, it's actually applying it, it's doing it.

    12:00-12:11

It's as simple as this, you know, knowledge is knowing that if I eat a better diet, I will be healthier, that's knowledge.

    12:11-12:12

    Wisdom is what?

    12:13-12:16

    Actually eating a better diet.

    12:18-12:19

So you have to start here.

    12:20-12:23

James is telling us that wisdom isn't just a knowing thing.

    12:23-12:25

He says it's a doing thing.

    12:25-12:27

He's like, "Hey, hey, who here is wise?

    12:27-12:29

    "Who here has wisdom?

    12:30-12:30

    "Show me.

    12:31-12:33

"Don't talk about it, live it.

    12:36-12:52

"Who is wise and understanding among you "will know it when you show it, right?" All right, with that stated, the rest of the passage here, James is going to show us two kinds of wisdom.

    12:54-12:55

    Spoiler alert here.

    12:56-12:58

He's going to show us there's a false kind of wisdom.

    13:00-13:02

    And then there's God's wisdom.

    13:03-13:04

That's the rest of the passage.

    13:04-13:10

He's comparing false wisdom and true wisdom.

    13:12-13:16

And on your outline, we kept these on here because I want you to have these.

    13:16-13:22

I have, there's three questions to ask yourself that determines what kind of wisdom you live by.

    13:23-13:26

Because in the false wisdom and the true wisdom, James tells us three things.

    13:27-13:31

He says, you gotta know where they come from, you gotta know who they benefit, and you gotta know what they produce.

    13:32-13:37

And when you figure out those things, then you'll know if you're living by false wisdom or God's wisdom, right?

    13:39-13:40

And this is gonna help you apply it.

    13:43-13:48

In any situation you face in life, You need to ask yourself, okay, where is this wisdom coming from?

    13:51-13:53

Who is my wisdom meant to benefit?

    13:54-13:55

And what is my wisdom producing?

    13:56-13:59

Those are the three things James walks us through with false and with true wisdom, all right?

    14:00-14:05

So it's up to us, by God's word, to know the difference.

    14:05-14:06

    And that's letter B.

    14:06-14:11

Know the difference between, I'm calling false wisdom, I'm calling it me first wisdom.

    14:13-14:16

Know the difference between me first wisdom Godly wisdom.

    14:16-14:17

    Look at verse 14.

    14:18-14:31

He says, "But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth." So first up is the wisdom.

    14:32-14:34

It's pretty obvious why I call it me first wisdom.

    14:36-14:44

Me first wisdom, James tells us right out of the gate, it resides in a heart full of bitter jealousy and selfish ambition.

    14:44-14:45

    What is that?

    14:46-14:47

    What's bitter jealousy?

    14:47-14:48

    You know what that is?

    14:50-14:53

That's when you can't be happy for someone else who's blessed.

    14:55-15:07

You see somebody else receiving some kind of blessing or good fortune or prosperity or however you wanna frame it, but you see somebody else is having a good day and that bothers you.

    15:09-15:10

    Why does he deserve?

    15:11-15:11

    He doesn't deserve it.

    15:12-15:13

I should be the one getting it.

    15:13-15:17

And we're like, we're ticked off that somebody else is being blessed.

    15:19-15:25

That's what he's talking about here with bitter jealousy and selfish ambition.

    15:25-15:27

I think we know what that is, right?

    15:28-15:30

All you care about is what's good for you.

    15:32-15:33

I don't really care about other people.

    15:33-15:36

I just, you know, what's best for me.

    15:37-15:46

And James says, hey, hey, don't brag about being wise This describes you because you're lying to yourself.

    15:48-16:00

And we've talked about this before because wisdom has come up several times through James, but this me first wisdom is the basis of all worldly wisdom.

    16:04-16:09

And I gotta tell you, I cringe because I hear this garbage all the time.

    16:11-16:12

    People say, you know what?

    16:13-16:21

You know, Pastor Jeff, I went to see my therapist or my secular counselor, and he told me, I have to do what's best for me.

    16:24-16:31

You know, he told me that I deserve to be happy, and that really, I need to learn how to love myself.

    16:33-16:38

So with the decisions that I need to make, Pastor Jeff, I need to learn how to, I just, I need to trust my gut.

    16:38-16:39

    That's what I really need.

    16:39-16:40

I have to trust my gut.

    16:43-16:44

    That's me first wisdom.

    16:45-16:47

    Where does that come from?

    16:48-16:49

Right, that's our first question, right?

    16:50-16:50

    Where does that come from?

    16:52-16:55

Well, look at verse 15, he tells us where it comes from.

    16:56-17:04

He says, "This is not the wisdom "that comes down from above." Like, where does it come from?

    17:05-17:05

    Not from God.

    17:07-17:12

That me first thing, that selfish ambition, that bitter jealousy, that me, me, me thing, Where's that from?

    17:13-17:14

He's like, that ain't from God.

    17:14-17:17

First, he goes, that's not from above.

    17:17-17:18

    All right?

    17:19-17:20

Look at the rest of verse 15.

    17:21-17:32

He says, "But is earthly, unspiritual, demonic." Earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

    17:37-17:43

Do you realize that's just another way of saying the three enemies of God.

    17:44-17:50

Other places in scripture, I believe it's the world, the flesh and the devil, right?

    17:50-17:51

    It's the same thing.

    17:52-17:54

It's the same unholy trinity, right?

    17:55-17:56

    It's the same thing.

    17:58-18:01

World and flesh, that's the earthly, that's the unspiritual.

    18:01-18:03

What that means is just simply this.

    18:03-18:09

This kind of wisdom, this me first wisdom, this false wisdom, it's just thinking about here and now.

    18:09-18:11

    There's no thought towards God.

    18:11-18:14

There's no thought towards anything spiritual.

    18:14-18:17

There's no thought towards what does the Bible say?

    18:17-18:18

It's just about here and now.

    18:19-18:21

What's gonna feel best for me?

    18:21-18:22

    What's gonna serve me?

    18:22-18:23

    That's the world of flesh.

    18:24-18:27

But I gotta tell you though, the thing that kind of jumps out to me is demonic.

    18:29-18:33

Listen, worldly wisdom, E-first wisdom, isn't just bad advice.

    18:34-18:40

It is from hell, according to James.

    18:41-18:42

    It's demonic.

    18:45-18:48

It's straight from Satan's trash mouth.

    18:51-18:59

But here's the thing, this false wisdom, this me first wisdom, here's the problem with the church.

    18:59-19:03

Listen, the problem with me first wisdom is it sounds good.

    19:04-19:05

    It sounds good.

    19:07-19:08

    Here's what I mean.

    19:09-19:15

Remember the Garden of Eden, Genesis chapter three, do you remember Satan showed up to deceive Eve and Adam was with her, remember that story?

    19:17-19:21

Did Satan show up and say, "Eve, hey, listen, I got an idea.

    19:22-19:24

Let's spit in your creator's face.

    19:25-19:30

Let's just flagrantly rebel against God." Is that what he did?

    19:31-19:31

    No, no, no, no, no.

    19:32-19:37

He used what James has got, this demonic, me first.

    19:38-19:45

And he convinced Eve to sin by telling her that she needed to have her best interest in mind, right?

    19:46-19:54

He says, "Oh, no, no, no." He goes, "You should eat off this tree." Not this tree, don't eat off this tree.

    19:55-19:59

It was a different tree, but makes a nice illustration.

    19:59-20:10

But I don't think the tree in the garden looked like this But anyways, Satan was like, "Eat off this tree because," and I'm paraphrasing, he goes, "Hey, hey, "you'll be like God.

    20:10-20:16

"And listen, if you eat off this tree, "you will know things that you have never known before.

    20:16-20:20

"Doesn't that sound great?" And you see how that would appeal.

    20:21-20:24

Like, yeah, yeah, I wanna be like God.

    20:24-20:25

    I wanna know some things.

    20:25-20:30

And we have completely disregarded what God actually said.

    20:31-20:33

    That's me first wisdom.

    20:34-20:36

It's good for you, it benefits you.

    20:37-20:41

So the first question we ask is, where does this wisdom come from?

    20:42-20:44

Well, he says, not from God.

    20:45-20:46

    Look at verse 16.

    20:48-20:53

He says, "For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist." Oh, that sounds familiar.

    20:55-20:59

Jealousy and selfish ambition, there it is again.

    21:00-21:01

And that answers question number two, right?

    21:01-21:03

Who is my wisdom meant to benefit?

    21:05-21:11

Worldly wisdom, me first wisdom, false wisdom, whatever you wanna call it.

    21:13-21:14

It's always meant to benefit me.

    21:16-21:21

What's best for me, what's good for me, you gotta look out for number one, I gotta take care of myself.

    21:21-21:26

That's that worldly wisdom always has myself in view first, always.

    21:29-21:31

    James doubles down on that.

    21:31-21:32

    There it is again.

    21:33-21:36

Where jealousy and selfish ambition exists.

    21:39-21:41

Our third question is what is my wisdom producing?

    21:43-21:44

So we know where it comes from, right?

    21:44-21:47

It's not from God, it's meant to benefit me.

    21:47-21:48

    What is it producing?

    21:51-21:56

Well, I think when you have this kind of wisdom, it's pretty obvious, but look at verse 16.

    21:56-22:03

He says, "Where jealousy and selfish ambition exists," Here it is, there will be disorder in every vile practice.

    22:05-22:07

    Disorder in every vile practice.

    22:10-22:16

That's just what you get when everybody insists on getting what they want.

    22:18-22:21

    Disorder, chaos, right?

    22:21-22:23

    Fighting, what causes fighting?

    22:24-22:25

    What causes grudges?

    22:26-22:28

We're gonna talk about that next week.

    22:29-22:31

    But here's a preview.

    22:33-22:36

James tells us this discord comes from this me first wisdom.

    22:38-22:39

    What causes lawsuits?

    22:41-22:42

    What causes divorce?

    22:44-22:49

It's me first wisdom, discord, every vile practice.

    22:50-22:57

All right, now let's talk about something good because James moves on to godly wisdom in verses 17 and 18.

    22:58-23:01

And the first question is, where does this wisdom come from?

    23:02-23:04

In this contrast that he's making, look at verse 17.

    23:05-23:13

He says, "But the wisdom from above." Okay, first of all, we see where it comes from.

    23:13-23:16

This wisdom is from above, it's from God.

    23:16-23:18

God wrote it down in his word.

    23:18-23:19

    You wanna know God's wisdom?

    23:21-23:24

He has blessed us by writing it down.

    23:24-23:27

    Number one bestseller, right?

    23:29-23:30

So that's where it came from.

    23:32-23:34

But look at the rest of verse 17.

    23:35-23:54

He says, "Is first pure, then peaceable, "gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, "impartial and sincere." All right, look, he gives a list here.

    23:56-23:58

And I could do what a lot of preachers do here.

    23:59-24:05

And I could go through the list and I could explain these glossary terms.

    24:07-24:08

I'm not gonna do that, right?

    24:09-24:17

Like, you know, when it says here, full of mercy, like in the Greek, that means like lots of mercy.

    24:18-24:21

And when it says sincere, that means without hypocrisy.

    24:21-24:22

    That's what that means.

    24:23-24:25

And you're like, yeah, I could have guessed that.

    24:26-24:28

    There's nothing really challenging here.

    24:28-24:40

What I wanna do instead of dissecting the definition of these pretty obvious words, and I did study them by the way, I can show you my notes, and they basically mean in the English exactly what they meant in the Greek, okay?

    24:40-24:42

There's no curve balls here, all right?

    24:44-24:50

What I want you to do instead is to take a giant step back and ask question number two, who is godly wisdom meant to benefit?

    24:51-25:00

And when you look at this list, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, mercy and good fruits, impartial, sincere.

    25:00-25:01

    Who's it meant to benefit?

    25:05-25:06

    The answer is everyone.

    25:07-25:08

    That's the answer.

    25:08-25:29

Imagine a church, just imagine a church where instead of everyone demanding what they want, every single member of the church aims to make decisions that benefit everybody in the church.

    25:34-25:42

I'd like to go to a church like that because this kind of wisdom benefits everyone, right?

    25:43-25:47

Then the third question, what is this kind of wisdom producing, right?

    25:47-25:48

We see where it came from.

    25:48-25:49

    It came from God.

    25:49-25:51

    It benefits everyone.

    25:51-25:52

    What does it produce?

    25:52-26:04

Verse 18, he says, "And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace." It results in a harvest of righteousness.

    26:04-26:09

This is actually a very tough verse to translate, but it's, we get it, we get it.

    26:10-26:22

He's saying peacemakers sow peace and a righteous environment just grows and grows and grows because peacemakers aren't concerned with getting their own way.

    26:23-26:24

    That's what he's saying.

    26:26-26:28

All right, we get it, right?

    26:28-26:30

    It's an easy passage.

    26:30-26:32

James is like, okay, who's wise?

    26:32-26:33

And there's two kinds of wisdom.

    26:34-26:41

There's like the me first wisdom that comes from the devil and it's all about me and it produces discord, right?

    26:41-26:52

But then on the other hand, there's godly wisdom and that comes from God and that's focused on what's good for everyone and that produces peace and righteousness.

    26:54-26:55

    And that's the text.

    26:57-27:07

And I suppose we could leave now, and you would say, I learned some things, except the definitions of all those words in verse 17, I didn't learn that, I'll have to look that one up.

    27:11-27:25

But I think we would really be doing a disservice if we didn't just take another, just a little, another little step forward here, because James told us that wisdom isn't just about knowing things, right?

    27:25-27:33

And I can't just have you leaving here today like, well, now I know some new things, because the issue is what are you gonna do with it?

    27:34-27:34

    That's the issue.

    27:35-27:37

Are you gonna do something with it?

    27:38-27:46

Are you gonna go back to the same old thing Monday through Saturday and then come back in here next Sunday and maybe make another half-hearted commitment that things are gonna be different?

    27:48-27:50

James says, "Who is wise in understanding?

    27:52-27:53

    Show me." Right?

    27:53-27:54

    So let's take another step.

    27:54-27:57

That's why the letter C, apply liberally.

    28:06-28:07

    Apply liberally, right?

    28:09-28:10

    Like shampoo.

    28:12-28:14

But you need to take this, you need to apply it liberally.

    28:15-28:21

'Cause here's the thing, Every scenario that you face in life, every scenario, you have a choice.

    28:23-28:25

Are you going to go with the me first wisdom?

    28:27-28:28

Or are you gonna go with God's wisdom?

    28:31-28:36

So in these scenarios, that's why we wrote these questions down.

    28:36-28:39

You have to ask yourself, where's this wisdom coming from?

    28:40-28:41

And who's it meant to benefit?

    28:42-28:43

    And what's it producing?

    28:45-28:50

So let's run it up the pole here and give a couple examples.

    28:53-29:01

Let's imagine you work with a guy who's just not always easy to get along with.

    29:01-29:02

Is that the nice way to say it?

    29:03-29:07

And he said something that really ticked you off.

    29:09-29:09

    Okay?

    29:10-29:12

You got, okay, at this point you have options.

    29:12-29:15

And maybe, you're like, here's the option that I'm taking.

    29:15-29:20

I'm gonna march into his office first thing on Monday, and I'm gonna give him a piece of my mind.

    29:20-29:25

I'm gonna tell him off, I'm gonna annihilate, I'm gonna tell him exactly what I think about him.

    29:26-29:28

That's an option that you have, right?

    29:29-29:30

    You with me?

    29:30-29:31

    You have that option.

    29:32-29:33

    So here's the question.

    29:34-29:35

What kind of wisdom is that?

    29:38-29:41

You're like, God is a God of vengeance.

    29:42-29:43

    So that's godly wisdom.

    29:45-29:45

    Yeah.

    29:46-29:47

Let's back up here for a second.

    29:49-29:50

What kind of wisdom is that?

    29:51-29:52

Well, where does it come from, first of all?

    29:54-29:56

This, I'm gonna give him a piece of my mind.

    29:56-29:56

    I'm gonna tell him off.

    29:56-29:57

Does that come from the Bible?

    29:59-30:04

Okay, so if it's not from God, it's from, it's from the enemy, isn't it?

    30:05-30:11

And if you do that, if you go in and tell him off and give him a piece of your mind, question two, who does that benefit?

    30:13-30:14

    Right, benefits me, doesn't it?

    30:15-30:19

It's gonna make me feel better to put this piece of trash in its place.

    30:20-30:21

It's gonna make me feel better.

    30:23-30:25

Okay, the third question is what does it produce?

    30:26-30:29

Do you think that's going to bring a more peaceful environment at work?

    30:30-30:32

Or would that produce more discord?

    30:34-30:34

    Right?

    30:37-30:38

So what kind of wisdom is that?

    30:39-30:40

    Is that me first wisdom?

    30:41-30:42

    Or is that godly wisdom?

    30:42-30:43

    Which one is it?

    30:43-30:43

    Shout it out.

    30:44-30:45

    That's me first, isn't it?

    30:46-30:47

    And that's from hell.

    30:48-30:49

    It's demonic.

    30:50-30:52

Okay, so here's another option that you have.

    30:53-31:11

Another option you have is just, well, this guy really ticked me off and (groans) but Proverbs 15, one, says a soft answer turns away wrath and a harsh word stirs up anger.

    31:11-31:13

So instead of retaliating, you know what?

    31:13-31:15

I'm gonna be kind to him instead.

    31:16-31:17

And I'm gonna look for a way to bless him.

    31:19-31:20

    As hard as that is.

    31:21-31:22

That's another option you have, right?

    31:24-31:26

Okay, so the first question is where did that come from?

    31:27-31:28

Where did that wisdom come from?

    31:28-31:29

    Was that from God?

    31:30-31:33

Yeah, it was, it was literally from Proverbs 15.

    31:35-31:36

    And who does that benefit?

    31:38-31:42

If you're walking into work, looking to be kind and bless people, who benefits from that?

    31:44-31:45

    Everybody does, right?

    31:45-31:47

If you're fostering that kind of work environment.

    31:47-31:52

And the third question is, what is my wisdom producing?

    31:53-31:54

    Produces peace, right?

    31:56-31:57

    It produces peace.

    31:59-32:01

That was an easy one, let's do another one.

    32:04-32:06

Evaluating what kind of wisdom we're using.

    32:06-32:07

    Let's do another scenario.

    32:09-32:14

Like I, let's pretend that you're like, I really like this girl.

    32:14-32:16

I really wanna be with this girl.

    32:17-32:19

I really think she's the one.

    32:21-32:22

    Okay, you have options.

    32:23-32:26

One option is we'll just move in together.

    32:27-32:29

We're not gonna get married, we'll just move in together.

    32:31-32:32

That's an option that you have.

    32:34-32:35

And you can say, you know what?

    32:35-32:37

It makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

    32:37-32:45

Because we're saving money, we're sharing utilities and here's the thing, we can sort of see if we're compatible, right?

    32:45-32:48

You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it, right?

    32:48-32:51

So we can see how compatible we are.

    32:52-32:59

By the way, and if the thing goes south and we break up, there's no divorce or any of that legal stuff.

    33:00-33:04

I just take my stuff and go.

    33:05-33:06

    Or she takes her stuff.

    33:07-33:08

That's an option that you have, right?

    33:10-33:12

But what kind of wisdom is that?

    33:16-33:18

Well, first of all, number one, where's it come from?

    33:18-33:19

Does that come from God's word?

    33:20-33:24

Does God's word tell you to move in with somebody and try them out to see if you wanna get married?

    33:24-33:26

Is that, no, well, that's not from God's word.

    33:27-33:28

So where's it from, tell me?

    33:29-33:33

That's demonic, that's from the devil, all right?

    33:33-33:36

And who benefits from this kind of wisdom?

    33:38-33:38

    I do.

    33:39-33:41

I'm only thinking about what's best for me.

    33:44-33:46

And the third question is, what does it produce?

    33:50-34:04

Well, I've been counseling people for a long time, so I can tell you from personal anecdotes, and I can tell you from the statistics of people that live together without getting married, it most often doesn't end well.

    34:06-34:11

So, is that me first wisdom or is that godly wisdom?

    34:13-34:14

    That's me first, isn't it?

    34:16-34:18

Or, on the other hand, what if I'm like, you know what?

    34:19-34:21

I love this person so much.

    34:22-34:29

I do want to spend the rest of my life with this person and the Bible doesn't present living together outside of marriage as a good option.

    34:30-34:35

So, if I really love the person, I'm going to marry them.

    34:35-34:36

I'm gonna do the right thing.

    34:38-34:39

Where does that wisdom come from?

    34:41-34:42

    That's from God, isn't it?

    34:42-34:44

That's the first question, it comes from God.

    34:44-34:46

Second question is, who does that benefit?

    34:48-34:49

That benefits the other person, right?

    34:50-34:53

It's not saying, I wanna try you out and see if you're good for me.

    34:54-34:59

It's saying, I love you so much that I'm willing to enter a forever covenant with you till death do us part.

    35:00-35:01

That's how much I love you.

    35:02-35:04

    It's about benefiting others, right?

    35:05-35:06

    And what's that producing?

    35:07-35:13

Well, when you have a godly marriage, a godly home, it produces peace.

    35:14-35:20

You know, at this point I thought, well, you know what would be fun is you shout out scenarios and we'll keep doing this, but we don't have time.

    35:20-35:22

Do we, Ashley, we don't have time for that.

    35:22-35:23

Okay, Ashley says we don't have time for that.

    35:24-35:31

But you can apply this to anything and determine what kind of wisdom am I living by?

    35:32-35:35

    Me first or God's?

    35:37-35:39

So my friends, what are you facing right now?

    35:41-35:51

In your home, at work, in your church, you have a choice you need to make.

    35:52-36:02

And you realize I need wisdom in order to make this choice And like haircuts, it matters where you get it.

    36:06-36:09

As the worship team comes forward, you know, I wanna do a quick callback.

    36:12-36:15

I said near the beginning that wisdom is the most important thing.

    36:15-36:16

    Do you remember that?

    36:16-36:17

Like that was so long ago.

    36:18-36:20

Wisdom is the most important thing.

    36:20-36:21

It wasn't that long ago, so I don't know.

    36:21-36:23

Wisdom is the most important thing.

    36:25-36:25

    And that's true.

    36:27-36:31

but I can't step off this platform without saying this.

    36:33-36:37

In order to get wisdom, you have to get Christ.

    36:41-36:50

Because listen, church, all of these things that we've been discussing in James, we've talked about trials and temptations, how to handle those things.

    36:50-36:51

    We talked about being impartial.

    36:52-36:55

Last week, Pastor Taylor talked about watching your mouth.

    36:55-36:57

All of these things that we've discussed.

    36:57-37:00

Listen, you can't go after these things.

    37:00-37:09

You can't grow in wisdom and you can't do it if you don't know Jesus Christ.

    37:12-37:15

Because you're just trying to go after them in your flesh.

    37:16-37:19

Without God's Holy Spirit, listen, you don't have the ability.

    37:22-37:25

So you can hear a message like this and say, yeah, you know what?

    37:25-37:26

I probably need to grow in wisdom.

    37:26-37:29

    Listen, you want wisdom?

    37:29-37:34

It starts with knowing Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

    37:36-37:46

Because Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1.30 to the believers in Corinth, he says, "You are in Christ Jesus, "who became to us," what?

    37:47-37:48

    See that?

    37:50-37:51

    What is Christ to us?

    37:52-37:55

    He is wisdom from God.

    37:57-38:04

The Bible says that we're all born with a bent toward sin because of Adam and Eve's sin that we talked about a few minutes ago.

    38:05-38:08

The Bible says that we're all guilty before a holy God.

    38:10-38:14

And there's nothing you can do to take that guilt away.

    38:16-38:23

You can say, you know what, I'm going to work in the soup kitchen or I'm gonna try to be the best neighbor that I can.

    38:23-38:29

And somehow we think our good works are going to make God overlook the fact that we have rebelled against him.

    38:31-38:32

But our good works won't do it.

    38:34-38:43

Any more than if you commit a crime here and show up in court and you tell the judge, you're gonna try to be a nice person, the judge is gonna say, well, good for you, but that doesn't take away the fact that you have committed a crime.

    38:48-38:51

God in his grace, you see, that's what we're celebrating with Christmas.

    38:52-38:54

You notice the trees, all the lovely decorations.

    38:54-39:03

And we celebrate this every week, but especially at this time of year, our hearts get like ultra tuned in to this glorious truth that God became a man.

    39:07-39:14

And he did that so that he could die on the cross to pay the penalty for sin that you and I deserve.

    39:18-39:22

and He rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    39:23-39:24

    So please hear me.

    39:26-39:37

You can go after all the wisdom in the world, but if you don't know Jesus Christ, you're just going to be the smartest person in hell.

    39:40-39:47

First and foremost, if you're gonna get wisdom, You've got to get Jesus.

    39:49-39:50

Would you bow your heads with me, please?

    39:54-40:04

And maybe there's somebody here this morning or somebody watching this stream that's like, man, I need more than wisdom, I need forgiveness of sin.

    40:05-40:11

I just want to encourage you now to take a moment and cry out to God.

    40:14-40:15

God, I want to know you.

    40:16-40:20

I wanna know the salvation that you purchased for me through your son.

    40:27-40:33

But Father, right now I wanna believe, and I choose to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

    40:34-40:45

Father, I am turning from my sin, and I am embracing everything that you have provided through the death of your son and through his resurrection.

    40:48-40:55

If you're praying that now, or if that's something that you want to pray, or you need more information, listen, you need to see me today.

    40:55-40:58

You need to see Pastor Taylor or one of our elders today.

    41:02-41:16

Father, we commit this time to you, and ask that your name is greatly glorified as our hearts turn to you.

    41:16-41:23

Father, we are so insistent on this demonic, self-centered wisdom that James talks about.

    41:25-41:33

Father, I pray today that there would be repentance for all of us, that we would go after the wisdom from above.

    41:34-41:37

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read James 3:13-18

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. How can you tell where your wisdom comes from - whether it’s demonic (Jas 3:15) or from above (Jas 3:17)?

  3. In what area do you need God’s wisdom right now? How does this passage encourage you in both what to do and what NOT to do?

  4. Have you ever held non-Christians to Biblical standards? (For example: telling your non-Christian coworker he shouldn’t swear because of what the Bible says about our speech.) Why doesn’t that work? How should you address them instead?

  • 00:38-00:41

You can turn your Bibles to James chapter three, verses one through 12.

    00:41-00:47

You know, some of you may not know this, but I used to be an intern at Harvest over 10 years ago during the early days of the church.

    00:47-00:50

We met at Marshall Middle School.

    00:50-00:56

Pastor Jeff graciously let me shadow him for a year and even preach four times during that internship.

    00:57-01:01

And also a part of that internship was giving announcements on Sunday.

    01:03-01:41

And as Jeff whoops, announcements aren't anybody's favorite thing do. I'd rather preach a sermon any day of the week, they come up here and give announcements. It's a bit awkward. You don't want to be over prepared and stiffly read from a piece of paper, but you also don't want to be under prepared and have no idea what you're gonna say. And back then I had no experience, so standing in front of a room of people and talking was a bit uncomfortable. It I was called to give an announcement about a mission trip fundraiser.

    01:42-01:47

And to ease the tension in my stomach, I tried to make an off-the-cuff joke.

    01:48-01:49

    It didn't go very well.

    01:50-01:55

It was cringey, it was unintentionally rude, and it went over like a lead balloon.

    01:56-01:57

    No one laughed.

    01:58-02:01

A hush fell over the crowd.

    02:02-02:07

And to avoid offending people with the same exact announcement, I'm not gonna tell you my joke.

    02:09-02:12

Even though some of you the entire time will be thinking, what was his joke?

    02:12-02:12

    What did he say?

    02:12-02:13

    What did he say?

    02:13-02:14

None of your business, don't worry about it.

    02:16-02:22

Let's just say it was so bad that Pastor Jeff had to jump on stage and try to walk that horse back to the stable.

    02:23-02:28

But unfortunately, that horse was miles down the road and there was no hope of bringing it back.

    02:29-02:38

And hopefully, history won't repeat itself and Jeff's standing right here, waiting to jump on stage as close as he can just in case history repeats itself again.

    02:39-02:45

You know, we laugh in retrospect about that moment, but it wasn't very funny when it happened.

    02:46-02:52

I think back to that moment, and many like it throughout my life, and I think to myself, what was I thinking?

    02:52-02:54

    Why did I say that?

    02:54-02:59

As soon as I made that joke, I instantly regretted it.

    03:00-03:01

    We've all been there, right?

    03:02-03:04

This happened to anybody else besides me.

    03:04-03:07

Don't you dare leave me alone up here like I was 11 years ago.

    03:07-03:10

It's happened to every single one of us.

    03:11-03:14

You let a careless comment slip out to your spouse.

    03:15-03:20

You join in with your friends in making crude jokes that you know are out of bounds.

    03:21-03:25

You blow up at your kids for the millionth time this week.

    03:26-03:34

You say something extremely idiotic that you wish you could just grab out of the air and shove back down your throat, but you can't.

    03:36-03:39

You can never ever take back what you say.

    03:40-03:50

We're in the middle of our sermon series in the book of James, which is filled with difficult, yet necessary commands for how we are to live out our faith as followers of Christ.

    03:51-04:00

And James has shown us over and over and over again that true faith leads to submission and obedience to the word of God.

    04:00-04:04

True faith leads to a transformed life.

    04:05-04:11

And this morning we're gonna learn that true faith leads to transformed speech.

    04:13-04:18

And a few weeks ago, Pastor Jeff touched upon the importance of our words in James 1:26.

    04:19-04:28

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle or control his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.

    04:29-05:14

worthless. Simply put, do not claim to know and love Jesus if you do not seek to filter your words and control what you say. Do not claim that Jesus is your Lord when your tongue is completely out of control because your tongue is connected to your heart. Your words say a lot about you and reveal who you really are. And James ramps up the seriousness of our words in chapter 3 verses 1 through 12 and clearly lays out why and how we should watch our mouths. This isn't just a minor issue that we should put on the back burner of our to-do list.

    05:14-05:29

This is an essential aspect of our faith that we cannot ignore. And I'll be honest with you, whenever Pastor Jeff assigned me this passage a few months ago, I one of the things I struggle with the most.

    05:31-05:39

But the Lord has really used these verses to take me to the mat this week and point me to my desperate need for Him.

    05:40-05:42

And I hope the same will be true of you as well.

    05:43-05:46

So let's go to the Lord in prayer and ask for His help because we all definitely need it.

    05:49-05:56

Father, we come before you and we ask and pray that we would be a people that tremble at your word.

    05:57-06:01

We not only seek to believe it, but we seek to live in light of it.

    06:02-06:07

I pray your Holy Spirit would preach a much better sermon in our hearts than I possibly could with my mouth.

    06:08-06:12

Lord, may you be with my mouth and give me the words to say.

    06:13-06:16

And may you give everyone in this room the ears to hear.

    06:16-06:19

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

    06:20-06:21

All right, so how to watch your mouth.

    06:22-06:26

Number one, recognize its controlling influence.

    06:26-06:30

    Recognize its controlling influence.

    06:32-06:38

So James kicks off the longest teaching about the tongue of the New Testament in a very surprising way.

    06:39-06:51

Verse one, he has this to say, "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, "for you know that we who teach "will be judged with greater strictness." He really comes out the gate swinging, doesn't he?

    06:52-07:00

James has an extremely high view of scripture and the task of teaching other people about scripture.

    07:01-07:12

When a man stands behind a pulpit, he is called to declare what God has definitively said instead of sharing his own flawed and subjective opinions.

    07:13-07:15

He is not called to entertain.

    07:15-07:19

He is not called to innovate and bring his new ideas and interpretations.

    07:19-07:25

He's not called to use the text as a springboard to talk about what he really wants to talk about.

    07:25-07:33

He is called to faithfully read the text, explain the text, illustrate the text, and apply the text.

    07:33-07:34

    That's it.

    07:35-07:40

This is why I agonize and pray over every single word as I prepare.

    07:40-07:47

I go over and edit these sermons a lot because I wanna make sure that what I'm saying is accurate and honoring to the Lord.

    07:48-07:55

I know the same is true for Pastor Jeff and every other man who preaches here, because we believe what James says here is true.

    07:56-08:08

We believe that we will be judged with a greater strictness, which means that we will have to give an account someday for every single word that came out of our mouths we stood before you.

    08:10-08:13

And some of you are thinking, "Phew, I'm glad I'm not a preacher.

    08:13-08:18

"Don't have to worry about that." Well, do you teach back at Harvest Academy?

    08:20-08:21

Do you teach your own kids?

    08:22-08:23

Do you lead a small group?

    08:24-08:26

Do you teach some other kind of class here at Harvest?

    08:28-08:32

If that's true of you, then this verse has something to say to you as well.

    08:32-08:43

James wants every single teacher or preacher of the word to approach the sharing of the word with an air of responsibility and reverence.

    08:44-08:48

This is not a task that should be rushed into quickly or treated flippantly.

    08:49-09:00

Teaching the word of God is by far the most important thing you could use your mouth to communicate, prepare and present like you believe that.

    09:01-09:06

You must recognize that your teaching has an influence and an effect.

    09:08-09:17

And the question is, does my teaching have a godly influence and effect, or does my teaching have a worldly influence and effect?

    09:17-09:26

Am I painting an accurate picture of God and his word, or am I painting a completely inaccurate picture of God and his word?

    09:28-09:33

And James continues to discuss the influence of the tongue in our lives in verse two.

    09:33-09:50

He writes, "For we all stumble in many ways, "and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, "He is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body." So James calls out a reality that we cannot avoid.

    09:51-09:57

We all stumble and sin multiple times a day in multiple ways.

    09:58-10:01

None of us are flawless and perfect.

    10:02-10:08

How you stumble may be different than how I stumble, but these things are sins nonetheless.

    10:08-10:30

But then James seems to contradict himself and make an exception when he says, "And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, also able to bridle his own body." So, you must be a perfect person without any and all sin if you never ever stumble or mess up with what you say.

    10:31-10:34

Who wants to raise their hand and claim that this verse is describing them?

    10:36-10:38

    Where's Mr. and Mrs. Perfect?

    10:39-10:40

    Really, nobody?

    10:41-10:41

None of you, are you sure?

    10:43-10:46

Well, that's really the point that James is making here.

    10:47-10:57

This verse describes none of us, because we all stumble in this area without exception, which we have all admitted by not raising our hands.

    10:59-11:07

And James uses two common illustrations to help us understand the powerful influence of our tongue in verses three through five.

    11:08-11:14

If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.

    11:14-11:15

    Look at the ships also.

    11:16-11:23

Though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder, wherever the will of the pilot directs.

    11:23-11:29

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

    11:30-11:35

So our tongues are like the bit of a horse's bridle and a ship's rudder.

    11:36-11:43

Both are very small things that control the direction and destination of very large things.

    11:44-11:46

I actually have a picture of a bit and bridle for you.

    11:47-11:56

A bit is placed in the mouth of the horse to control their head movement and in turn control where they go.

    11:58-12:05

And many modern cruise ships still utilize rudders to steer and to maintain course.

    12:05-12:06

And I actually have a picture of a giant.

    12:06-12:09

That's how big a cruise ship rudder is.

    12:10-12:18

That may seem big to us, but if you zoomed out, you would see that it's really small in comparison to the rest of the ship.

    12:19-12:26

You know, cruise ships, we've all, maybe you've been on a cruise before with multiple restaurants, huge decks, and multiple activities.

    12:27-12:36

You hold thousands of people, but if this rudder isn't steering you in the right direction, you will not go to the islands that you paid to see.

    12:37-12:48

So James says that our tongue is very small in comparison to the rest of our body, but like a small bit or rudder, it can accomplish big things for good or for bad.

    12:49-12:54

The same bit and bridle that can lead a horse on the right trail can also lead you right off a cliff.

    12:55-13:00

The same rudder that steers you to Aruba can also crash you right into a coral reef.

    13:01-13:14

Your tongue can lead you to blessing or to ruin, to victory or to defeat, to a close-knit community, or to self-inflicted isolation.

    13:15-13:23

Your words reveal the direction of where you were heading and can even give people a sneak peek of your eternal destination.

    13:25-13:32

So based on how you've been speaking over the past few weeks, where are you heading in life?

    13:33-13:36

What do your words say about you?

    13:37-13:38

    Are you on track?

    13:39-13:43

Are you traveling down the path that God has laid out for you in his word?

    13:43-13:47

Or are you totally off the path and going your own way?

    13:48-13:52

I encourage every single one of you to do some self-reflection today.

    13:53-13:57

Evaluate the content and tone of your speech.

    13:58-14:06

Invite your spouse, your kids, and your friends into this conversation because they can point out the blind spots that you cannot see.

    14:08-14:15

Don't just assume that you're doing great in this area of life because you could be failing and stumbling without even realizing it.

    14:16-14:21

You could be unintentionally drifting off course and riding in the wrong direction.

    14:21-14:28

And if that's you, I don't want you to remain clueless any longer of the controlling influence of your tongue.

    14:28-14:34

I want you to recognize its importance and do something to change your direction.

    14:36-14:41

So how to watch your mouth, number two, refuse to underestimate its destructive power.

    14:42-14:45

Refuse to underestimate its destructive power.

    14:47-14:56

So not only does the tongue have the ability to influence, but it also has the power to destroy, to wound, to wear down, and to tear down.

    14:57-15:02

Every single one of us has a deadly weapon in our mouths.

    15:04-15:14

One pastor I read this week has this to say, "No wonder God put the tongue in a cage behind the teeth, "walled in by the mouth." Could be a dangerous animal.

    15:17-15:24

In verses five through eight, James unpacks three different reasons for why the tongue can be so devastating and destruction.

    15:24-15:28

You have A, B, and C on your outline for those three things.

    15:28-15:32

Letter A, it can spread corruption easily and quickly.

    15:33-15:38

It can spread corruption easily and quickly.

    15:42-15:44

Let's read verses five through six.

    15:45-15:48

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire.

    15:48-15:52

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

    15:53-16:02

The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life.

    16:04-16:05

James is the master of the metaphor.

    16:06-16:12

And he broke every single rule we learned in English class growing up by constantly switching up his metaphors.

    16:12-16:21

So first our tongue is a rudder, it's a bit, and now it's a small fire that can engulf an entire forest.

    16:23-16:31

You know, this comparison should really hit us in 2023 because we are constantly bombarded with images of wildfires on the news.

    16:32-16:49

And I read this past week that up to 90% of wildfires are triggered by acts of human carelessness, acts of human carelessness, such as flicking a lit cigarette into the woods or leaving a campfire unattended.

    16:50-16:58

A small act of carelessness can cause acres and acres and acres of damage and even lead to the loss of human life.

    16:59-17:12

In a similar way, small acts of carelessness with your tongue can cause an exhaustive amount of damage to your family, to your friends, to your church, and to yourself.

    17:14-17:29

James says that your fiery tongue is a world of unrighteousness, which means that there is no ceiling to the heights of wickedness that it can climb to, and there are no limits to the wreckage it can leave in its wake.

    17:32-17:37

James says the tongue is set among our members, staining, defiling the whole body.

    17:39-17:51

You know, whenever you're around a campfire, whenever you're around someone who's smoking a cigarette, you get that same smoky smell stuck in your hair, stuck in your clothes, and stuck in your nostrils.

    17:51-17:53

That happened to anybody else besides me.

    17:54-18:00

You can only get it away by washing your clothes, by washing your face, by washing your hair.

    18:02-18:06

Your words can leave a similar stench on you and others as well.

    18:07-18:17

Your destructive words have a corrupting power that hang over you like a cloud and can tarnish and ruin your witness and example.

    18:19-18:26

Nobody wants to be around that person who only has negative things to say about everybody and everything.

    18:27-18:39

Nobody is rushing to be close friends with that lady who constantly bashes people behind their backs because you know that when your back is turned, She's gonna be saying similar things about you.

    18:41-18:47

Nobody wants to hang out with that guy who is bitingly sarcastic and picks apart people with his words.

    18:49-18:59

That wicked stench can repel people and make them not wanna be around you because they don't wanna get that wicked stench on themselves as well.

    19:02-19:08

In verse six, we are told that our tongues can set fire to the entire course of life.

    19:10-19:13

Other way to translate that in the original Greek is the circle of life.

    19:14-19:17

And no, James isn't busting out into the famous Lion King song.

    19:18-19:22

He is simply referring to our circle or sphere of influence.

    19:22-19:29

You have to understand that your words don't just affect you, they affect every single person around you.

    19:30-19:35

You can spark a massive conflict or controversy with just one sentence.

    19:36-19:39

You have the power to shatter someone into a million pieces.

    19:41-19:47

You can say something in a few seconds that haunts someone for the rest of their lives.

    19:48-19:55

Every single one of us in this room can pull up something that someone has said to us that we will never, ever forget.

    19:58-20:00

Why else can the tongue be so destructive?

    20:00-20:01

    Let her be.

    20:01-20:03

It can be a weapon in the hands of Satan.

    20:05-20:08

It can be a weapon in the hands of Satan.

    20:11-20:14

You may be thinking at this point, well, Taylor, people are just way too soft.

    20:14-20:19

Whatever happened to sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

    20:19-20:23

Why can a few sounds from my mouth cause so much damage?

    20:23-20:24

    What's the big deal?

    20:26-20:48

Well, James makes it crystal clear This is a big deal, at the end of verse six, when he says, "The tongue is set on fire by hell." Your tongue can be a tool of instrument and healing in the hands of God, or it can be an instrument of death in the hands of Satan.

    20:50-20:53

Jesus has this to say about Satan in John 8, 44.

    20:53-20:59

"He was a murderer from the beginning "and does not stand in the truth "because there is no truth in him.

    21:00-21:15

"When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, "for he is a liar and the father of lies." Satan sits back with a giant bowl of popcorn and is so entertained when you choose to hurt people with your words.

    21:16-21:24

He gets a massive kick out of you twisting the truth because he is the father of lies.

    21:25-21:33

If you're a Christian, there is nothing that Satan can do to unsave you or wrench you out of God's tight grip.

    21:33-21:43

But he can lay temptations before you with the intention of getting your eyes off of God, off of who he wants you to be, and off of what he has called you to do.

    21:45-21:48

Your God has a plan and a purpose for your life.

    21:49-21:50

    But guess what?

    21:50-21:53

Your enemy has a plan and a purpose for your life as well.

    21:55-21:59

Satan wants you to be as ineffective for the gospel as possible.

    22:00-22:09

He wants you to become a miserable, bitter, oblivious, and self-focused Christian who makes no impact for the kingdom of God.

    22:11-22:16

I have to say, our enemy is doing a fantastic job of accomplishing this mission, isn't he?

    22:17-22:30

Look at the church landscape and bear witness to how many professing Christians are following the game plan of the enemy they claim to hate, rather than the ways of the God they claim to love.

    22:31-22:38

The way that people in the church world can speak to and about one another is despicable, and it's disheartening.

    22:39-22:56

The church should be a place of unity and not infighting, a place of friendly fellowship and not friendly fire, a place where we follow the lead and prompting of the Spirit, not the lead of our enemy.

    22:59-23:05

Let us not give our enemy any more ammunition in his battle against human souls.

    23:08-23:15

An essential aspect of training someone in firearm safety is the constant reinforcing of the deadly capabilities of a gun.

    23:17-23:27

In the same way, as a follower of Christ, an essential aspect of our training is the constant reinforcing of the deadly capabilities of our tongue.

    23:29-23:30

So why is the tongue so destructive?

    23:31-23:34

Letter C, it is impossible to fully tame.

    23:35-23:38

It is impossible to fully tame.

    23:41-23:44

Let's continue on with verses 7 through 8.

    23:44-23:54

For every kind of beast and bird and reptile and sea creature can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue.

    23:55-23:59

It is a restless evil full of deadly poison.

    24:00-24:04

You know, it's truly amazing to see what animals can be trained to do.

    24:05-24:15

If you jump on YouTube, you can find videos of elephants painting beautiful pictures, Monkeys doing sign language and playing video games.

    24:15-24:20

Did you know that in Sweden, they are training crows to pick up litter off the road?

    24:21-24:26

They've even been trained to pick up cigarette butts and put them in special waste bins.

    24:28-24:30

Everyone's worried about AI replacing their jobs.

    24:30-24:32

I guess we have to worry about birds now too.

    24:34-24:41

Some dogs are trained from birth to help the blind find their way around or sniff out explosives, counterfeit money and drugs.

    24:42-24:45

And then there's my dog, Murdoch.

    24:46-24:50

I love Murdoch, he means well, he's great with my kids, but he's a doofus.

    24:51-24:54

Since he was born, he's been super hyper and age has not changed that.

    24:55-24:59

He's almost seven years old, he's showing no signs of slowing down.

    25:00-25:05

He's getting a little bit white around the face, but his behavior's not changing at all.

    25:05-25:08

And the real kicker is we tried to train him, didn't we Kate?

    25:09-25:18

We took him to a training class graduated. I have some pictures to prove it. He has a diploma. He has a cap. I didn't give him a gown.

    25:20-25:39

He didn't seem very excited, did he, to get this training certificate. We have this certificate on file that tells us that Murdoch is a trained dog. That tells us that he doesn't ignore trained commands. That tells us that he will listen to us no matter what.

    25:41-25:44

But his behavior tells me something much different.

    25:46-25:54

We'd all like to believe that our tongues are expertly trained, like those painting elephants, or those Swedish crows that tidy up the road.

    25:56-26:03

But if we're honest, our tongues are more like Murdoch most of the time, lacking in proper training and running wild.

    26:05-26:11

According to James, the tongue is impossible for us to fully bridle, control, and tame.

    26:11-26:16

He says that it is a restless evil full of deadly poison.

    26:17-26:23

He just keeps piling on the negative descriptors for what our mouths are capable of.

    26:25-26:27

At this point in the sermon, you may be a bit exhausted.

    26:28-26:31

Maybe feeling a bit hopeless and helpless.

    26:32-26:39

Maybe thinking, okay, Taylor, you're telling me to watch my mouth, but you're also telling me that I can never fully watch my mouth.

    26:39-26:40

    What should I do?

    26:40-26:42

    What hope do I have?

    26:44-26:48

Well, earlier on I said that no one is perfect in how they speak.

    26:49-26:50

    And that's true.

    26:50-26:56

There is no mere human being who has ever or will ever fully tame the tongue.

    26:59-27:04

But there is one person who has done this perfectly, the Lord Jesus Christ.

    27:06-27:09

During his time on this earth, he always respected his parents.

    27:10-27:12

He never talked back to them.

    27:14-27:18

He never once told a lie to avoid an awkward situation or impress others.

    27:18-27:22

He never tore apart someone's reputation or slandered them.

    27:24-27:28

He never made fun of a disciple behind his back to the other disciples.

    27:30-27:38

Jesus only preached the truth at all times, and he never once had to make a public or a public retraction for something that he said.

    27:39-27:44

Yes, he spoke hard truths, but he did so with righteousness and purity.

    27:46-27:56

This perfect son of God did the unthinkable by suffering and dying in our place and on our behalf.

    27:57-28:04

We are told in scripture that on the cross, he not only took our sin upon himself, but he actually became our sin.

    28:05-28:12

He became our lying, our gossiping, our complaining, our harsh words, our false promises.

    28:12-28:16

He became all of these things for us.

    28:18-28:27

And if you have trusted in Christ alone for salvation, he has fully paid the price for all of your many failures and faults.

    28:29-28:46

And in return, his perfect righteousness has been given to you, has been accredited to your account before the Father, which means that you are now treated as if you never once failed or stumbled in your speech.

    28:47-28:51

You are now treated as if you perfectly spoke as Jesus spoke.

    28:51-28:53

    Praise the Lord.

    28:55-29:05

It is in light of this amazing truth that we seek to watch what we say is in light of this awesome truth that we seek to tame the tongue.

    29:07-29:14

We don't seek to tame the tongue in our own strength with the desperate long shot that God will love and accept us.

    29:15-29:25

We seek to tame the tongue in the power of the Holy Spirit with the confident assurance that we are already loved and accepted in Christ.

    29:27-29:32

We must look to Jesus as our perfect substitute and Savior.

    29:34-29:39

But we should also look to Him as our perfect example and follow in His footsteps.

    29:40-29:42

I wanna give you some homework today.

    29:43-29:47

I want you to go home this week and read one of the Gospels.

    29:48-29:49

    Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

    29:50-29:54

And I want you to zero in on how Jesus speaks.

    29:55-29:59

I want you to zero in how he uses his words.

    30:01-30:02

    And imitate that.

    30:04-30:13

And slowly but surely over time, you'll see and others will see that you look and speak a lot more like him.

    30:16-30:17

    How to watch your mouth.

    30:18-30:22

Finally, resolve to only use it for blessing.

    30:25-30:27

resolved to only use it for blessing.

    30:31-30:39

In verse 9, James gives a convicting example of how the tongue can be restlessly evil and full of deadly poison.

    30:39-30:40

    He writes this.

    30:41-31:00

"With it, we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God." So James is saying that many have a forked tongue, And they try to use it for two contradictory purposes-- for blessing and for cursing.

    31:01-31:10

You use your mouth to say how much you love God, but then you use that same mouth to tear down other people and show them hatred.

    31:12-31:24

You come to church, you sing all the songs, you say amen in all the right spots, but on the way home, you passionately cuss someone out who has not fallen the rules of the road as you would.

    31:26-31:42

You wake up tomorrow morning, you have your devotions, you pray passionately to the Lord, and then a few moments later you walk downstairs and you intentionally condescend your spouse and put them down to make them feel bad.

    31:44-31:54

You rock out to worship music during your commute, but at work during a meeting, you intentionally to belittle and embarrass a guy on your team in front of all your colleagues.

    31:56-32:01

According to James, this type of behavior and lifestyle is delusional and hypocritical.

    32:04-32:08

Imagine that you were extremely sweet, complimentary, and pleasant with me as one of your pastors.

    32:09-32:11

You always have a kind word to say to me.

    32:12-32:14

You even send me nice notes on occasion.

    32:15-32:22

But it comes to my attention that at church, whenever I'm not around, you are unbelievably rude to my kids.

    32:23-32:26

You lose it on them in the hallway as they're running down the hallway.

    32:26-32:30

You even give them mean nicknames and make fun of some of their physical features.

    32:32-32:36

Let me ask you an obvious question with an equally obvious answer.

    32:36-32:40

If I find out about this, are we gonna have a great relationship?

    32:41-32:43

There's no chance of that, right?

    32:44-32:47

You can't treat my kids that way expect to be buddy-buddy with me.

    32:48-32:55

You can't be on bad terms with my kids and be on good terms with me, because they are an extension of me.

    32:56-33:00

Sam and Emmy were made in the image and likeness of my wife and I.

    33:01-33:06

If you disrespect them, that shows that you don't truly respect me.

    33:07-33:18

In a much greater way, how can we bless the Lord with our mouths and then use that same mouth to hurt and to harm those made in his image and likeness.

    33:19-33:25

When you disrespect someone with your words, you are ultimately disrespecting their creator.

    33:26-33:33

And on the other hand, when you bless others with your words you are ultimately blessing the God who made them.

    33:35-33:40

I can tell a lot about you based on how you speak to everyone around you.

    33:43-33:51

And James continues on in verses 10 through 12 to explain why this dual purpose of the tongue does not work or make sense.

    33:52-33:54

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.

    33:55-33:58

My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

    33:58-34:03

Does a spring pour forth from the same opening, both fresh and salt water?

    34:03-34:07

Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives or grapevines produce figs?

    34:07-34:11

Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

    34:13-34:18

James says, my brothers, these things ought not to be so.

    34:19-34:26

Ought not in the original Greek is a very strong negative statement that's only used once in the entire New Testament, and that's here.

    34:27-34:37

James is making it crystal clear that this kind of hypocrisy should have no place in the life of the church or in the life of a believer.

    34:38-34:41

And he closes with using two more metaphors for our mouths.

    34:42-34:45

Our mouths are like springs and our mouths are like trees.

    34:47-34:49

I'm not a big nature guy, but maybe you could help me with this.

    34:49-34:57

Have you ever come across a spring out in the woods or on your wilderness wanderings that pours forth both fresh water and salt water?

    34:58-34:59

    No, because that's impossible.

    35:00-35:06

Whenever you go to Sorghum's, do you angrily kick an apple tree produce cherries?

    35:07-35:08

    Why not?

    35:09-35:11

Because apple trees cannot produce cherries.

    35:11-35:13

    They can only produce apples.

    35:14-35:19

As James says, a fig tree cannot produce olives, and a grapevine cannot produce figs.

    35:21-35:28

The same way a transformed heart should not be bearing the rotten fruit of evil speech that harms and hurts others.

    35:29-35:35

Instead, it should only be bearing the right fruit of words that bless and help others.

    35:38-35:43

And Jesus speaks this in Matthew 12, verses 33 through 34, which Jeff talked about a few weeks ago.

    35:43-35:51

Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known for its fruits.

    35:52-35:56

You brood of vipers, how can you speak good when you are evil?

    35:57-36:02

For out of the abundance, out of the overflow of the heart, The mouth speaks.

    36:04-36:06

You cannot have a forked tongue.

    36:07-36:12

You cannot straddle the fence and have one foot in worldliness and the other in holiness.

    36:13-36:16

That is not how your tongue or your heart works.

    36:16-36:17

You have to pick a lane.

    36:18-36:22

Will you pick blessing or will you pick cursing?

    36:22-36:29

Will you pick love for God and love for people or will you pick hatred for God and hatred for people?

    36:31-36:37

As we close, I want to share a verse with you that I revisit often, and I want you to commit to memory.

    36:38-36:59

Ephesians 4.29, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." This is the biblical filter that you should run every thought through before you say something.

    37:00-37:06

I want you to ask yourself three questions based on this verse before you ever let a word exit your mouth.

    37:07-37:07

    Three questions.

    37:08-37:11

Number one, is what I'm saying corrupting?

    37:13-37:15

Is what I'm about to say corrupting?

    37:16-37:19

Is it obscene? Is it crude? Is it unbiblical?

    37:19-37:21

    will this dishonor God?

    37:23-37:26

And if you're unsure, take the safe route and don't say it.

    37:28-37:32

Number two, will this build up the person that I'm talking to?

    37:33-37:37

Will this build up the person that I'm talking to?

    37:38-37:39

    Will this bless them?

    37:39-37:41

    Will this help them?

    37:41-37:43

Will this point them to the grace of God?

    37:44-37:47

Or will it hurt them and point them away from Him?

    37:49-37:52

And the third question, every husband have your pen ready.

    37:52-37:53

    Write this down.

    37:54-37:56

Is this the right time to say it?

    37:57-37:59

And all the wives in the room said amen.

    38:00-38:02

Is this the right time to say it?

    38:02-38:07

Sometimes you can say the right thing at the completely wrong time.

    38:08-38:11

Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing.

    38:13-38:20

Be sensitive to the person's need in that moment and consider what they need to hear and what they don't need to hear.

    38:22-38:26

Make sure that your words fit every single occasion that you find yourself in.

    38:27-38:39

Choose to be a person who speaks blessing to and over those made in the image of God, which covers every single person that you come into contact with without exception.

    38:42-38:44

You know, James is a book of action.

    38:45-38:51

James didn't write these verses to give us an interesting lesson on the tongue.

    38:51-39:00

He wrote these verses under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit so you will seek to watch your mouth on a moment by moment basis.

    39:01-39:06

He wants you to truly understand how much is at stake when you open your mouth.

    39:07-39:13

He wants you to recognize it's controlling influence over you and others.

    39:13-39:17

He wants you to refuse to underestimate its destructive power.

    39:18-39:23

And he wants you to resolve to only use it for blessing and not for cursing.

    39:25-39:30

Maybe you've come to the realization this morning that you don't truly know and love Christ.

    39:31-39:34

And this reality is made very clear by how you speak.

    39:36-39:42

If that's you this morning, I implore you to place your faith in Christ alone for salvation.

    39:43-39:51

And then and only then will you be transformed from the inside out, and your mouth will be given the ability to be used for good.

    39:53-40:00

And for the rest of us, we only take a few moments to do some personal inventory and bring our speech to the Lord.

    40:02-40:07

As our team makes their way forward, our worship team, please bow your heads and close your eyes.

    40:10-40:18

Spend some time with the Lord and ask for his help so you can obey and apply the verses we just read.

    40:19-40:29

Pray that he would clear your heart of specific idols and sins that have a vice grip on your heart and are pouring out of your mouth.

    40:30-40:39

Lust, anger, bitterness, distrust, impatience, pride, or fill in the blank with whatever you're wrestling with.

    40:40-40:48

Push aside all distractions and focus on the changes that the Lord is calling you to make.

    40:54-41:05

Holy Father, we come before you in our undone because we are a people of unclean lips and we live among a people of unclean lips.

    41:06-41:10

And Lord, we have seen your glory this morning in your word.

    41:11-41:20

And we realize, Lord, how we have sinned against you today, this week, or the course of this past month.

    41:21-41:25

And we come before you and we thank you for the mercies of your son.

    41:26-41:32

We thank you that he showed his love for us on the cross, coming to die in our place.

    41:33-41:41

to take all of our sinful words upon Himself and becoming our sinful words and paying the penalty for all of our sin.

    41:43-41:48

Lord, in light of that truth, Lord, help us to use our mouths for You and Your glory.

    41:50-41:59

I pray that we wouldn't use our mouths to make ourselves feel better, to impress others, Lord, to hurt others, to elevate ourselves.

    42:00-42:05

May we use our mouths to speak the truth of Christ and show others Christ.

    42:07-42:15

Lord, I don't want this message to just stay here in the building this morning or to stay in the parking lot for that it would stay with us the rest of this week.

    42:17-42:19

And your Holy Spirit would do the work that only he can.

    42:21-42:25

That he would challenge us, he would convict us that he would change us.

    42:27-42:28

Lord, we thank you for your goodness.

    42:29-42:30

We thank you for your mercy.

    42:30-42:35

And may we now use our mouths to sing to you with a heart that is full of love.

    42:36-42:38

In the name of Jesus, amen.

Intentional Faith: A "How To" Guide - How to Prove You Have Faith

Introduction:

Matthew 7:21 - Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Romans 2:6-8 - He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

How to Prove You Have Faith (James 2:14-26)

  1. A faith that doesn't Move you to Serve = dead faith. (Jas 2:15-17)
  2. A faith that is just about Agreeing to Doctrine = dead faith. (Jas 2:18-19)

John 3:2 - This man (Nicodemus) came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."

  3. A faith that Makes your Choices = living faith. (Jas 1:20-26)

  • 00:39-01:40

Open up your Bibles with me please to James in chapter 2. Let's just pause and I'm gonna ask you please, please pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's Word and I will pray for you to have a heart open to receiving God's Word. You should approach every message up here as the most important message ever given, because it's all God's Word. And I guess some weeks you feel that weight a little heavier than others, and this is one of those weeks. So I'm just going to ask I'm just pleased that we just pause for a moment and go before the Lord and be ready to receive what he wants to tell us.

    01:41-01:42

    All right?

    01:43-01:44

So pray for me, I'll pray for you.

    01:49-02:00

Father, just a moment ago, we sang, "There's No One Like You." And that also means there's nothing like your word You speak.

    02:03-02:04

    It matters.

    02:08-02:17

Every word you say, we have to regard as coming from the mouth of an eternal God.

    02:19-02:21

We need to take it with that level of seriousness.

    02:21-02:51

Father, let us hear what you have to say in your Word today. We pray in Jesus' name. All of God's people said, "Amen." James chapter 2, we're gonna be picking up in verse 14. While you're still turning there, the first pet that I ever had was was a hermit crab.

    02:52-02:55

How many people, show of hands, have ever had a hermit crab?

    02:56-02:58

Way more than I was expecting.

    02:58-03:00

Some of you put your hands up very proudly.

    03:01-03:04

I saw some of you like, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that.

    03:04-03:15

Well, if you, like me, if you had a hermit crab, you could testify that they are as fun as they are adorable, right?

    03:16-03:18

Didn't get a lot of amens on that one, Dan.

    03:20-03:22

    But hermit crabs are great.

    03:22-03:31

You know, we had the little plastic, you know, like bin for them with the sand and the shells, and you put the peanut butter in.

    03:31-03:32

Did you feed yours peanut butter?

    03:32-03:33

    We gave ours peanut butter.

    03:34-03:37

And they were just, I don't know.

    03:37-03:40

    I can't remember what mine's name was.

    03:40-03:44

Probably something stupid like crabby or whatever, shelly.

    03:47-03:51

but which is a bad name for a crab, but great for a person, bad for a crab.

    03:52-03:57

But just to make that clear, but you know the worst part about having a hermit crab?

    03:57-04:00

Those of you that has your hand up, you know.

    04:01-04:12

You know the worst part about having a hermit crab was when they died, you didn't know it just by looking at it.

    04:13-04:16

You see, when they died, they looked exactly like that.

    04:16-04:26

And there'll be times I've walked by for days, oh, well, you know, crabby's just out, you know, hanging out, but you didn't know they were dead until what?

    04:26-04:29

You go to pick them up and play with them and then what happened?

    04:30-04:35

Plop, they would just like plop out of their shell and you saw all that stuff that was inside.

    04:35-04:37

Oh, it was, do you remember what I'm talking about?

    04:38-04:39

    Some of you are connecting.

    04:40-04:52

Others of you need to go buy a hermit crab this afternoon just to experience the slight shock, more grossness that comes when they just plop out of their shell when they're dead.

    04:53-05:01

You see, they had this way of looking alive when actually they were dead.

    05:02-05:07

And we're in this series right now called intentional faith.

    05:08-05:18

And I'm gonna ask you, don't you wanna know If the faith that you claim to have is alive, or is it dead?

    05:21-05:36

Biblically, it's possible that you live your life thinking that you have this living and saving faith, and you don't.

    05:38-05:39

    Look at verse 14.

    05:41-05:51

James says, "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith, but does not have works?

    05:54-06:03

Can that faith save him?" So James introduces this next section by hitting us right between the eyes.

    06:04-06:30

If you say that you have faith, but there's nothing in your life that indicates that beyond your words, James says, "What good is that?" Is that true saving faith?

    06:31-06:33

And listen, you have to understand this.

    06:33-06:38

There is a type of faith that does not save, right?

    06:38-06:41

We're gonna see this verse 17, verse 20, verse 26.

    06:41-06:52

He says, "It's faith that is dead." And then he says, "It's useless." And then again, he says, "It's dead." This is how our Lord said it back in Matthew 7, 21.

    06:52-07:17

"Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, "but the one who," look at this, "does the will of my father, "who is in heaven?" And Jesus went on to say, people are gonna say to him on that day, "Lord, Lord, didn't we do all these things?" And I'll say, "Depart from me, I never knew you." But you have to see that Jesus and James saying the same thing, it's not about being a sayer.

    07:18-07:20

Standing up, I have faith, I have faith, I have faith.

    07:20-07:22

It doesn't matter what you say.

    07:28-07:28

    Matters what you do.

    07:30-07:45

We talked about this a couple of weeks back, I believe, but we are actually judged according to our works because our works reveal who we really are, not who we say we are, right?

    07:47-07:52

Romans 2, if you need a good cross-reference verse, judged according to works.

    07:53-07:53

    What, what?

    07:53-07:55

Look at what the Bible says.

    07:55-07:58

He will render to each one, what's it say?

    07:58-07:59

    according to his works.

    08:00-08:08

To those who by patience and well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

    08:08-08:19

But for those who are self-seeking and do not, oh, there it is again, obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

    08:23-08:28

So we see in verse 14 here in James chapter two, he's talking about the importance of works.

    08:29-08:30

What do we mean by works?

    08:30-08:36

I think we gotta get a good definition on the table because some people might wanna take works to mean anything.

    08:37-08:46

But biblically, when the Bible talks about works, it's fruit that manifests in the life of a born again Christ follower.

    08:48-08:50

It's obeying the word of God.

    08:51-08:56

It's just very simply, it's doing the things that God calls his people to do.

    08:57-08:58

    That's works.

    09:00-09:00

    Right?

    09:01-09:02

Like what are some examples of works?

    09:03-09:05

Well, I'm gonna write a few down here.

    09:07-09:08

    Here's a big one.

    09:09-09:19

Something that is repent, bear fruit in keeping with repentance, right?

    09:20-09:24

And then, you know, Harvest Bible Chapel, we talk about what does a disciple do?

    09:24-09:36

we believe a disciple of Jesus Christ worships, walks, and works, right?

    09:37-09:45

Works, being involved in ministry, whether it's working in kids ministry, worship ministry, hospitality, facilities, security, whatever.

    09:47-09:54

Here's another work we've talked about last month quite a bit is your witnessing.

    09:54-09:57

That's a work, that's something that God has called you to do.

    09:57-09:58

    It's an act of obedience.

    09:58-10:01

It's something that should show up in the life of every believer.

    10:02-10:02

    Here's another one.

    10:05-10:14

You know, Jesus said, "Where your treasure is there, your heart will be also." So we could say one work would be how you spend God's money.

    10:14-10:15

    It's all God's.

    10:15-10:17

What do you do with God's money?

    10:18-10:22

Jesus said, "That's an indicator of where your heart is." Right?

    10:24-10:34

So as soon as we talk about works, as is our custom, we like to jump to either side of the spectrum, right?

    10:35-10:42

And there are some people that are like, "Yes, if you don't do these things, you can't get saved." And they wanna make this like work salvation.

    10:42-10:43

    And that's not true.

    10:44-10:48

Works do not save you, right?

    10:48-10:57

But then you get to, I think, more of the opinion that you would find in a church like ours, where works are regarded as completely unimportant.

    10:58-11:00

And I've actually heard people say that in the church.

    11:01-11:02

    Oh, works don't matter.

    11:02-11:03

We're not saved by works, so works don't matter.

    11:04-11:06

And that's not what the Bible says either.

    11:09-11:16

And some people look at what James says, and they almost see it as a contradiction with the apostle Paul.

    11:16-11:20

Like James and Paul are like butting heads here.

    11:20-11:25

James and Paul, they were only butting heads because Paul says you're justified by faith and James says you're justified by work.

    11:25-11:27

So these two are really clashing.

    11:27-11:31

Listen, James and Paul are not head to head clashing here.

    11:32-11:39

Instead of seeing them head to head, what you need to do is see James and Paul back to back, like Charlie's Angels pose, right?

    11:39-11:40

You know what I'm talking about?

    11:40-11:41

    Some of you do.

    11:41-11:46

They're back to back because they're defending the truth.

    11:47-11:53

And you see what Paul was going after was people that wanted salvation by works.

    11:53-11:54

I'll earn my way to heaven.

    11:54-11:56

And Paul's like, eh, that doesn't do it.

    11:57-12:09

And what James is going after are the people that say they want a salvation that doesn't require anything, a salvation that doesn't demand anything.

    12:11-12:21

And the truth is no one is saved by works, but no one is saved without producing works.

    12:22-12:27

And this gets so messed up in the church, so bad.

    12:30-12:34

But you have to think of the relationship of faith and works like this.

    12:41-12:44

I'm gonna draw a little campfire here.

    12:48-12:51

You have to think of the relationship like this, right?

    12:52-12:53

    So you have this fire.

    12:57-13:00

I'm going to put a little orange in the fire here.

    13:00-13:01

I feel like Bob Ross up here, right?

    13:02-13:03

Do I look like Bob Ross?

    13:03-13:04

    Don't answer that.

    13:08-13:08

    All right.

    13:09-13:10

    Yeah, I need more hair.

    13:10-13:10

    All right.

    13:12-13:17

So, this is the relationship with faith and works.

    13:17-13:18

We're gonna see this in James.

    13:20-13:25

You have a fire and you have smoke, right?

    13:25-13:32

Now, you could have all the smoke in the world and not create a fire out of that smoke, right?

    13:34-13:38

But if you have fire, you're always going to have smoke.

    13:39-13:43

And you see, that's the relationship between faith and works.

    13:44-13:49

Faith is like the fire, and the smoke is like the works.

    13:49-14:01

You could do all the works in the world and you're never going to conjure up biblical saving faith, but this is what we're gonna see James is talking about.

    14:01-14:08

If you truly have biblical faith, it always results in works.

    14:08-14:12

It's the smoke that comes from the fire of faith.

    14:13-14:15

    That's the relationship, you see.

    14:17-14:27

It's simply this, how we live proves who we really are, not who we say we are.

    14:29-14:40

And if you wanna push back on that, I would just lovingly challenge you to consider What exactly happens when someone gets saved?

    14:42-14:44

    It's always the same thing.

    14:45-14:47

It's always the same thing, right?

    14:47-14:48

    How does somebody get saved?

    14:48-14:50

    They hear the gospel message.

    14:50-14:56

They hear the message about Jesus Christ, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    14:56-15:02

They hear the gospel message, they believe the gospel message, and they turn from their sin.

    15:03-15:06

And what happens when someone genuinely does that?

    15:06-15:07

They become an adopted child of God.

    15:08-15:13

And the Bible says God puts his Holy Spirit in the heart of every believer.

    15:16-15:20

And when that happens, that results in a total transformation.

    15:21-15:27

Your desires change, your appetites change, your purpose change, everything changes.

    15:28-15:34

And you'll never convince me that the God of the universe comes and indwells your heart and you stay the same.

    15:39-15:41

A faith that hasn't changed you hasn't saved you.

    15:42-15:49

And listen, you can be a church goer, you can be a church member, you can be a perfect church attender.

    15:53-16:03

But if you don't have evidence in your life that God indwells you, then he doesn't.

    16:05-16:07

And you don't have biblical faith.

    16:09-16:11

Like, well, what's the evidence that God indwells you?

    16:13-16:15

    It's a true saving faith.

    16:17-16:23

The fire always results in works, the smoke, right?

    16:23-16:26

So let's, that's really the whole sermon.

    16:27-16:29

    Like, woo-hoo, we're done, I'll hang on.

    16:30-16:31

How to prove you have faith.

    16:31-16:35

Write this down, 'cause James doesn't leave us there, so we're not gonna stop there.

    16:36-16:38

James goes on to prove his point.

    16:38-16:39

How to prove you have faith.

    16:39-16:44

Number one, a faith that doesn't move you to serve is a dead faith.

    16:45-16:47

Look at verses 15 and 16.

    16:49-17:06

He says, "If a brother or sister is poorly clothed "and lacking in daily food, And one of you says to them, go in peace, be warmed and filled without giving them the things needed for the body.

    17:08-17:09

    What good is that?

    17:11-17:12

    What good is that?

    17:14-17:16

You see, James is saying when you see a need.

    17:19-17:24

Somebody in the church, he's talking about specifically someone in your church or someone in your small group.

    17:25-17:31

It's like, man, you got, they come to you and they're like, "Man, I'm really struggling right now.

    17:32-17:42

"I am really struggling." And your response is, "Well, good luck with that." You know, that does sound tough.

    17:42-17:45

I really hope something works out for you.

    17:47-17:49

Or the worst, you know what we say, right?

    17:49-17:50

    Thoughts and prayers.

    17:53-17:54

    Sorry.

    17:55-17:57

Thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers.

    18:01-18:05

But you don't do anything to actually help?

    18:08-18:09

    What good is that?

    18:10-18:11

    That's what James is saying.

    18:11-18:13

He goes, that's being a new creature in Christ.

    18:14-18:20

That's God's Holy Spirit living in you as you see somebody in desperate need and you do nothing to help?

    18:21-18:22

You're just like, hey, good luck?

    18:24-18:25

    Look at verse 17.

    18:26-18:45

He says, "So also faith by itself, "if it does not have works is dead." Listen, he says, if you can so easily dismiss a brother or sister in need, he doesn't say your faith is weak.

    18:46-18:48

He doesn't say your faith is immature.

    18:49-18:50

Do you see the word that he uses?

    18:52-18:55

He says, "Your faith is dead.

    18:56-19:02

"It's dead." And you're like, "Well, no, hang on, why, why, why?

    19:02-19:04

"I care, I care." No, you really don't.

    19:06-19:10

Because caring is, hey, let's find a way to fix this, right?

    19:10-19:16

Let's find a way, let's sit down, let's pray, but let's talk and let's figure out a way to fix this problem.

    19:19-19:26

Because when you really have faith, like true biblical faith, you can't help but help.

    19:28-19:30

And I've seen it every time in this church.

    19:31-19:36

When a need shows up here, I see the people that have true faith jumping in.

    19:36-19:39

Let's figure out the best way to help.

    19:40-19:42

And I see people that have dead faith.

    19:42-19:43

It's like, well, good luck with that.

    19:43-19:45

I hope they get that situation figured out.

    19:45-19:46

    James says that's dead faith.

    19:47-19:48

    Maybe it's needs here.

    19:49-19:59

Maybe it's needs with our friends in Thailand, where there's constant needs, 23 churches and four children's homes, and there's always needs there.

    20:00-20:03

We have ministry connections in Nepal.

    20:03-20:08

We've given to help in the past time, especially during the pandemic.

    20:09-20:18

I've been in touch with Pastor Timothy from Nepal, and I don't know if you've been following the news, but right where he does ministry, there was a massive earthquake.

    20:19-20:19

We have some of those pictures.

    20:20-20:20

Can we show some of those?

    20:22-20:33

This is, again, pastor friend of mine, he has a whole network of churches, much like Thailand, and this devastating earthquake hit, and it directly affected two of their church plants.

    20:37-20:41

Eight of their people are seriously injured, okay?

    20:42-20:44

These are people that we are connected with in ministry.

    20:45-20:48

And I'm calling on you to say, "Hey, do you wanna help support this?

    20:49-20:54

Go to our giving page, go in the missions tab, give the general missions.

    20:54-20:58

We're going to be sending them some relief to try to help them this week.

    20:59-21:07

And you can be a part of helping." But you see right now, some people are gonna look at this and they're gonna think, "Oh, that's too bad.

    21:07-21:08

    I hope people step up.

    21:08-21:10

I hope people help." What about you?

    21:13-21:18

Can we just see a desperate need and just close our heart to it?

    21:26-21:27

We have other needs in the church.

    21:27-21:31

We are constantly in need of children's workers and hospitality workers.

    21:31-21:36

And I can't think of a ministry where we don't need more people stepping up.

    21:36-21:43

And there are people that hear the call and say, "Wow, you know what, that ministry, yeah, like children's ministry, that's really important.

    21:43-21:45

I sure hope people step up and help with that.

    21:45-21:46

And I would say, well, what about you?

    21:47-21:56

How can you see a need and you have some ability to meet the need and you just brush it off?

    21:56-21:58

You see, that's what James is saying here.

    21:59-22:07

If you can meet a need and you just brush it off, that says something about your heart.

    22:09-22:10

What it says is your faith is dead.

    22:12-22:19

Right, number two, a faith that is just about agreeing with doctrine is a dead faith.

    22:24-22:25

    Look at verse 18.

    22:26-22:30

He says, "But someone will say, "you have faith and I have works.

    22:31-22:45

"Show me your faith apart from your works "and I will show you my faith by my works." Right, so the guy that's reading this or hearing this, "Hey, you need to pump the brakes there, Pastor Jeff.

    22:45-22:50

"I got faith." James says, "Show me, show me.

    22:52-23:10

"Point to something in your life that says, "'Here's the evidence that my faith is real.' "Point to something in your life right now "that says, 'Here's the evidence.' "Show me choices that you make, "things that you do because of Jesus, "because of what God's word says.

    23:10-23:25

"point to something." If you're like, "Well, you know what, Pastor Jeff, "I believe, I do believe, "there's just not a whole lot to point at in my life." Well, James would say, "Well, then you don't really believe." 'Cause look at verse 19.

    23:25-23:34

He says, "You believe that God is one." We all know people like this.

    23:37-23:38

And maybe you're one of them.

    23:39-23:44

You know, maybe you're trying to share the gospel, someone invites them to church, you're having a spiritual conversation.

    23:45-23:46

    We've all been there.

    23:47-23:51

Where immediately the person says, "Well, I believe in God." You ever heard somebody say that?

    23:51-23:53

"I believe in God." They just hurry up and throw that up.

    23:53-24:01

Like, before you start with all this gospel stuff, I just want you to know, I acknowledge that there is a God.

    24:02-24:02

    I believe in God.

    24:03-24:04

    Look at what James says.

    24:05-24:07

He says, "You believe that God is one?

    24:07-24:12

"You do well." Anybody sense a bit of sarcasm there?

    24:14-24:15

    You get that?

    24:16-24:17

    James is like, "Wow!

    24:19-24:25

You agree with the most basic doctrine of Scripture that there's one God?

    24:26-24:27

    Wow!

    24:28-24:29

    Are you Charles Spurgeon?

    24:31-24:32

    Wow!

    24:33-24:34

    Good for you!

    24:35-24:35

    That's awesome!

    24:36-24:38

    That's awesome, Mr. MacArthur!

    24:38-24:40

You know who else believes that?

    24:41-24:45

Look at verse 19, he says, "Even the demons believe." And shudder.

    24:47-24:52

He goes, "Great theology." Oh, by the way, you know who else has decent theology?

    24:53-24:53

    Our demons.

    24:55-24:55

    Great theology.

    24:57-25:07

In fact, we could probably get a demon to write a doctrinal statement for the church, and it'd probably be pretty accurate.

    25:13-25:15

Except for all the parts where they'd lie.

    25:17-25:19

But James, you see James's point here, right?

    25:21-25:23

James says, oh, you believe that there's one God.

    25:24-25:25

    Good for you.

    25:25-25:37

By the way, that level of theology isn't even on demon level, because demons believe that, and they are shaking in their little demon booties.

    25:39-25:43

They're terrified because they know that there is a God.

    25:44-25:46

And you can just say it flippantly.

    25:49-25:52

You believe the facts, but you have no commitments.

    25:54-25:56

James here is telling us, look, intellectually agreeing.

    25:57-26:01

Intellectually agreeing with facts is not enough.

    26:01-26:03

That's not true biblical saving faith.

    26:03-26:04

    It's not enough.

    26:05-26:08

You want a good case study of this, just very, very quickly.

    26:08-26:11

You don't have to turn here, but just write the reference down.

    26:11-26:12

You can go back and check this later.

    26:13-26:15

But John chapter three, famous passage.

    26:16-26:24

John 3, two says, "This man," talking about Nicodemus, "came to Jesus by night and said to him," now look at what Nicodemus said to Jesus.

    26:24-26:25

    Do we have that scripture?

    26:26-26:49

It says, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." Without breaking this down too much, you have to notice that Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus' teaching.

    26:51-26:53

    He acknowledged Jesus' signs.

    26:54-26:59

And it looked like in a real sense, he was acknowledging the divinity of Jesus Christ.

    27:00-27:07

And I would expect the next verse, Jesus to say, "Wow, that's really good, Nick.

    27:07-27:09

"Hey, you sound like you're saved.

    27:10-27:17

"You sound like a good Christian boy." But if you're familiar with that passage, you know that's not what Jesus said.

    27:19-27:23

Jesus pointed out that it's not enough to just intellectually agree with these things.

    27:23-27:24

    What did Jesus say?

    27:25-27:29

He said, "Nicodemus, you must be changed.

    27:30-27:46

You must be born again." So listen, if your faith is just agreeing with the Bible, but you don't have works, that says something about your heart.

    27:49-27:51

And what it says is your faith is dead.

    27:53-27:56

Then number three, how to prove you have faith.

    27:56-27:57

    Those are two negatives.

    27:58-27:59

    Here's a positive.

    28:00-28:02

Number three, a faith that makes your choices is a living faith.

    28:04-28:06

A faith that makes your choices is a living faith.

    28:06-28:07

    Look at verse 20.

    28:08-28:14

It says, "Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, "that faith apart from works is useless?

    28:18-28:22

"You want proof that works are the evidence of real faith?" Look at verse 21.

    28:23-28:31

He says, "Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?" You know, stop there, Abraham.

    28:31-28:36

Like if you're familiar with the New Testament at all, you know he's the poster boy for faith, right?

    28:37-28:38

He's the father of the Jews.

    28:38-28:43

He's the father of everyone who has true faith in the living God.

    28:44-28:47

And James here takes us back to Genesis chapter 22.

    28:50-28:52

Paraphrase, you can go back and check this later.

    28:52-28:57

The Abe was finally, finally given the son that he was promised.

    28:57-28:59

    He was finally given Isaac.

    29:03-29:06

And God said, "Okay, give him back.

    29:09-29:21

"Sacrifice him." And Abe proved that his faith was real because he was willing to do whatever God said.

    29:22-29:23

    No questions asked.

    29:25-29:26

    Look at verse 22.

    29:28-29:41

He says, "You see that faith was active "along with his works, "and faith was completed by his works." Aba clearly demonstrated that he had faith.

    29:42-29:43

    Like how?

    29:45-29:50

It wasn't just walking around telling everybody that he'll stand still for more than seven seconds.

    29:50-29:54

Hey, by the way, I believe, Hey, by the way, I believe, hey, by the, I believe, I believe in God, I believe in the living God.

    29:55-29:59

He says, Abraham proved it by his works.

    30:01-30:03

Because we see Abraham's faith made his choices.

    30:04-30:09

Because I believe God, I'm going to do what God says I should do.

    30:10-30:12

He's like, that's how we know Abraham had faith, right?

    30:14-30:18

Look at verse 23 and 24, he goes on.

    30:18-30:26

He says in the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.

    30:27-30:29

And he was called a friend of God.

    30:31-30:37

You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

    30:38-30:42

Here he quotes Genesis 15, six, Abraham believed God.

    30:43-30:47

And James is expounding on that a little bit.

    30:47-30:56

It says, "Yes, Abraham believed God and he acted like it." You see that?

    30:57-31:05

Abraham was counted righteous and he acted like it.

    31:07-31:08

    And I love this.

    31:09-31:13

Do you see at the end of verse 23, Abraham was called a friend of God.

    31:17-31:24

See, a true born again believer, a true person of faith acts like a friend of God.

    31:25-31:28

And I just have to ask you, how's your relationship with God?

    31:33-31:35

What's your relationship with God like?

    31:37-31:44

Is God sort of that other church member that you run into on Sunday occasionally?

    31:47-31:49

Like, God, it was good to see you at Harvest Bible Chapel this morning.

    31:49-31:50

Maybe I'll see you next week.

    31:51-31:54

Is God sort of that like church acquaintance?

    31:54-31:56

    Is God the 911?

    31:57-32:05

Like, yeah, I pray when I'm at the complete end of my rope and I have nothing else to do, I pray.

    32:06-32:07

    Is God your 911?

    32:08-32:17

What if I, what if, what if I were to ask God what the nature of your relationship with him is.

    32:19-32:22

So God, I'm talking about this person here.

    32:22-32:23

    What's your relationship?

    32:23-32:24

    What would God say?

    32:27-32:28

Would God say, yeah, you know what?

    32:28-32:32

He walks around and talks like he knows me, but he never talks to me.

    32:35-32:37

Or would God say, yeah, he's a friend?

    32:38-32:40

Would God say, yeah, she's a friend?

    32:42-32:53

See, that's how Abraham was regarded because of his relationship with God.

    32:54-32:59

And you see James's point here, Abraham was not just willing in a hypothetical scenario.

    32:59-33:03

Like Abraham, he had faith and God set him down one time.

    33:03-33:05

Like, Abraham, how strong is your faith?

    33:05-33:06

Well, my faith is pretty strong, Lord.

    33:07-33:09

Okay, I'm gonna give you a hypothetical.

    33:10-33:19

You know, would you hypothetically, would you, you know, eat a cricket for me?

    33:21-33:22

Oh yes, Lord, I would do that.

    33:23-33:32

Okay, hypothetically, would you, I don't know, sacrifice your son for me?

    33:32-33:37

Oh yeah, hypothetically, God, if you ask me, you see, with Abraham, it wasn't hypothetical.

    33:38-33:41

He actually had his son on the altar.

    33:41-33:43

He had the knife in his hand.

    33:48-33:51

And that's what you have to identify in your life.

    33:51-33:56

Is your faith conceptual or is your faith actual?

    33:59-34:07

Because like Abraham, we'll know if you really have faith by what you'd actually do, not by what you say.

    34:08-34:10

    or think you do.

    34:12-34:34

And you're like, oh, okay, laying it on pretty thick here, Jeff, I'm supposed to compare myself and I'm supposed to compare my faith with Abraham's, you know, like on the Mount Rushmore of the Old Testament, you know, the father of Israel, I'm supposed to compare, that'd be like a guitar player comparing himself with Eddie Van Halen.

    34:34-34:37

I'm supposed to compare myself to that guy.

    34:40-34:44

Okay, if that seems a little heavy for you, let's look at the same principle in somebody not as famous.

    34:44-34:46

    Look at verse 25.

    34:46-35:04

It says, "In the same way, "was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works "when she received the messengers "and sent them out by another way?" So here's a total contrast.

    35:05-35:23

You have Abraham, this faithful Jewish male leader, and you have Rahab the prostitute, terrible nickname, but this evil Gentile woman.

    35:25-35:29

And if you're unfamiliar with her story, Joshua chapter two, I'm gonna paraphrase for you.

    35:30-35:40

"Joshua sent spies to Jericho, "and the king of Jericho found out "that there were Jewish spies in their midst, "and he asked Rahab, 'Where are the spies?'" And she's like, "I don't really know.

    35:40-35:43

"They kind of came through here and they were gone.

    35:43-35:50

"I'm not sure where they went, "but if you hurry, you might catch them, who knows." But she had them hidden on the roof.

    35:54-35:59

And then she goes to them and she explains why she protected them.

    35:59-36:02

She's like, "Hey, your God has a reputation.

    36:05-36:08

"I believe that he's the Lord "and he's going to give you victory.

    36:08-36:13

"Would you please spare me and my family?" And you're like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    36:13-36:15

"This Rahab became a person of faith.

    36:15-36:19

"How do we know that she became this person of faith?" That's James's point.

    36:19-36:21

We know she did because of her works.

    36:23-36:24

    Rahab had one opportunity.

    36:25-36:30

She had exactly one opportunity in her life to demonstrate that she really believed.

    36:32-36:37

And she took that opportunity because she put her life on the line to protect the Israelites.

    36:40-36:42

So you have two very different people.

    36:47-36:49

But James is stressing what they had in common.

    36:51-37:04

Listen to this, your faith is proven by what you do, especially when what you have to do is hard or costly.

    37:05-37:09

That's when we'll know if you really have faith.

    37:17-37:20

Not, do you believe that there's a God?

    37:20-37:21

    Do you go to church?

    37:21-37:23

Do you go to Bible study?

    37:23-37:25

All this, hey, all that is wonderful.

    37:28-37:32

But when it's all on the line, what do you do?

    37:35-37:39

When it's gonna cost you something to follow Jesus Christ, what do you do?

    37:43-37:45

And you see, that's the great thing about trials.

    37:45-37:47

You know, James started this whole epistle with trials.

    37:47-37:49

That's the great thing about trials.

    37:50-38:34

That's the great thing about the Bible calling us to hard things is because that's where your faith is proven. I mean just imagine with me for a second. Imagine that your life was just so cush. Just imagine that every day was the best day of your life. You felt great. You person that you knew just got along perfectly with each other. Oh and everyone that you know is healthy and you always had plenty in the bank, always.

    38:38-38:48

And all God ever asked of you, "Hey if you have time can you just show up at church on Sunday if it's not too inconvenient for you?" That's all God ever asked.

    38:51-39:02

Are you in that scenario? If that was you, how would I know if you really believed?

    39:03-39:29

Or maybe more importantly, how would you know if you really believed? But when When you're called to give sacrificially, when you're called to go on a mission trip, that you're like, I'll be honest with you, I'm really nervous about going, but I'm doing it.

    39:32-39:57

When you're watching your sick kids struggle, when you've lost your job, the bank account's pretty close to zero, and you're still making choices that prove that you trust God, then we'll know that your faith is alive.

    40:00-40:01

    One last illustration.

    40:04-40:15

Verse 26, he says, for as the body apart from the spirit is dead, So also faith apart from works is dead.

    40:17-40:19

His last illustration is a corpse.

    40:19-40:21

    It's a body without a spirit, that's dead.

    40:22-40:28

He says in the same way, faith without works, it's dead.

    40:31-40:39

You know, I was thinking a lot about that illustration because by virtue of my position, I attend a lot more funerals than the average person.

    40:40-40:49

And you know, there's a lot of work that goes into making that body in the casket look good.

    40:50-40:51

There's a lot of work that goes into that.

    40:53-41:05

You get the nice clothes, they dress the person up in nice clothes, and then they do all the makeup, and they have somebody come in, and I know a lady that does this.

    41:05-41:10

She goes in and does the hair of deceased people.

    41:17-41:26

And every funeral I've done, you know, as I'm standing near the casket, I'm talking with people, I'm praying with people, and people come through the line and they look at the body.

    41:27-41:28

They all say the same thing.

    41:29-41:30

You know what it is, right?

    41:31-41:33

"Oh, she looks so good." You know what I'm talking about?

    41:33-41:39

"She looks so good." They put a lot of effort into making that body look good.

    41:40-41:48

And not to rain on anybody's parade, but look, she might look good, but there's no life in there.

    41:53-41:55

    And that's James' point here.

    41:55-41:58

For some people, that's your faith.

    42:00-42:11

You put so much effort into making people think that you look good, but there's no life in there.

    42:16-42:18

This is what James is saying, people.

    42:19-42:21

    Faith works.

    42:23-42:25

    It just does.

    42:26-42:28

You can say that you have faith in God.

    42:29-42:32

You can agree that what God says is good and right.

    42:32-42:34

    You can carry your Bible.

    42:34-42:35

    You can come to church.

    42:35-42:41

And you can even post spiritual things on social media all the live long day.

    42:44-43:03

But if there's no evidence in your life, no fruit to back up your profession of faith, Nothing that I could point to that says, oh, look, he really believes that God said what he said and he meant what he said.

    43:07-43:08

Well, James says your faith is dead.

    43:12-43:24

If you're right now, if you're like, man, I'm feeling a lot of heaviness and conviction about that, man, I got some really good news for you.

    43:25-43:31

If you're sitting here going, man, I think my faith is dead, I got awesome news for you.

    43:32-43:35

Do you know God is in the resurrection business?

    43:36-43:37

    That's what he does.

    43:39-43:40

    That's God's thing.

    43:41-43:43

    He raises the dead.

    43:45-43:51

And I would say, look, if you're sitting here today or you're watching this stream and you're like, maybe my faith is dead.

    43:51-44:03

I'm like, well, let's just be honest with ourselves and let's be honest with God and let's ask him to bring life into a dead faith and then act accordingly.

    44:04-44:08

I ask you to bow your heads with me, please, as our worship team makes their way back up.

    44:14-44:27

And I know we're in a crowded room here, but I just want as much as you can to tune everything out and just focus on God right now.

    44:30-44:47

Father in heaven, we are so blessed in this country to have the freedom to come together like this and sing and pray and talk about your word.

    44:47-45:00

And there's countries right now where we could be arrested and or executed on the spot for doing exactly what we're doing.

    45:02-45:23

Father, I think that as great as the freedom is, the downside is it can attract people that maybe think they have faith because they attend a church service, but there's no evidence in their lives to back it up.

    45:25-45:37

So Father, just now, if there's any of my friends here that are discovering, wow, you know what?

    45:37-45:40

I really don't have biblical faith.

    45:41-45:46

God, I pray right now that they would be honest with you about that.

    45:55-45:57

The Father, they're done putting on a show.

    45:58-46:00

They're done trying to look good.

    46:02-46:17

But like Abraham and like Rahab, They're ready to start acting on what they say they believe.

    46:21-46:25

Father, you know, we're not trying to be a flashy church.

    46:25-46:27

We're not trying to draw attention to ourselves.

    46:27-46:34

We're not trying to put a spotlight on anything or anyone except Jesus Christ.

    46:35-46:37

Father, we just want to be faithful.

    46:40-46:42

And for that to happen, Father, we need a faith that's real.

    46:43-47:00

So I pray that through the conviction that comes from your word, as your Holy Spirit works with your word, that today you've rattled some people awake.

    47:01-47:04

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read James 2:14-26

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What exactly is James talking about when he speaks of “works”? Give specific examples of the kinds of works that flow from authentic faith.

  3. Suppose you see a church member who doesn’t seem to show any works resulting from saving faith. How do you know if they are just an immature believer or not really a believer at all?

  4. How would you approach such a person (from question 2) if they were in your Small Group?

  5. James says Abraham was justified by works (James 2:21), but Paul says in Romans 4:2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.” Do James and Paul contradict each other? How would you explain this?

  • 00:40-00:42

    Let's turn to the Word.

    00:42-00:44

Are you there, James chapter two?

    00:45-00:53

And I'm going to ask that you would pray for me, and I will pray for you as we approach God's Word together today.

    00:57-01:06

Father, last week we talked about where your Word says we need to receive with meekness the implanted Word, and I pray, Father, for all of us here today.

    01:08-01:11

We're ready to hear from you.

    01:11-01:12

    We're ready to learn.

    01:15-01:19

Might the seed of your word fall on good soil in our hearts.

    01:22-01:27

And produce as only you can, Father, we glorify your name.

    01:29-01:32

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

    01:34-01:35

James, Chapter two, are you there?

    01:37-01:48

When I was interning out in Joliet, Illinois, I went to the first small group in this church, this Harvest Church where I was interning.

    01:49-01:53

And in this small group, they had an icebreaker question.

    01:53-01:58

It was, "Share the favorite vacation you've ever been on.

    01:58-02:03

"What's your most favorite vacation you've ever been on?" So they were going around the room and everybody was sharing.

    02:03-02:06

And I was seated next to this blonde woman.

    02:07-02:13

And they said her husband wasn't with her that night, but it got to be her turn.

    02:14-02:29

And she said, "Well, one time we were going to go on a cruise and she says, "My husband just really didn't wanna go." He said, "What is there going to be to do?

    02:29-02:31

What's it going to be like?

    02:31-02:33

Are there going to be black people there?

    02:34-02:42

And she kept talking and I was just like, did I just walk into a Klan meeting?

    02:42-02:44

Like what is going on here?

    02:44-02:47

It got almost as uncomfortable as the room is right now.

    02:50-02:52

And I'm thinking, okay, I'm obviously the outsider here.

    02:52-02:56

I'm the new guy, but I gotta say something here.

    02:58-02:59

    I can't just...

    03:01-03:04

So my mind's racing, okay, how are we going to address this?

    03:04-03:10

And finally, when she was done sharing, I'm not even sure what I said.

    03:10-03:24

I just turned to her and I said something like, I said, I have to ask, why was your husband concerned about black people being on the cruise?

    03:24-03:28

And she doubled over laughing hysterically, tears.

    03:29-03:43

She goes, "Oh my gosh." She says, "You don't know." She says, "You haven't met him." She goes, "My husband's black." I'm like, "Oh." And you know what?

    03:43-03:44

    He loves that story.

    03:44-03:45

    We became friends.

    03:45-03:47

    His name's Andre, great guy.

    03:47-03:49

    He loves that story.

    03:50-03:57

But it's a story of things that were potentially very ugly that turned out to be funny.

    03:59-04:03

But truth is real racism doesn't go that way, does it?

    04:05-04:33

You know, it's very sad and it's very strange that we live in a world where you pick a reason, any reason to hate someone to any degree, whether it's flat out hatred, despise, or whether it's, I don't like to be around that kind of person, whether it's skin color education, or looks, clothes, money.

    04:36-04:41

Call it racism, call it bigotry, call it prejudice.

    04:41-04:43

They all belong to the same rotten family.

    04:44-04:48

And here in James, he calls it partiality.

    04:49-04:52

And that's what we're gonna talk about today because that's where he goes in the text.

    04:54-04:58

So I have to ask you, are you a partial person?

    04:59-05:03

Would you consider yourself to be impartial?

    05:09-05:11

Do you treat everybody the same?

    05:12-05:16

I mean, do you really treat and value everybody the same?

    05:21-05:26

You know, what was it, a year or two ago, Nausea Harris from the Pittsburgh Steelers came to church here.

    05:26-05:28

Yes, it was an accident, but he came.

    05:29-05:30

    (congregation laughing)

    05:33-05:38

And there were a few of us that were totally geeking out, like, "Wow, Nausea Harris was here.

    05:38-05:41

Nausea Harris was here." And I was thinking a lot about that this week.

    05:41-05:45

Like, shouldn't we celebrate every first-time visitor like that?

    05:48-05:53

The reality is partiality can happen in the church, And it can happen in this church.

    05:55-05:57

And it's a serious thing to God.

    05:58-06:01

This is an extremely serious thing to God.

    06:02-06:04

So we have to start here very quickly.

    06:05-06:06

    God is impartial.

    06:08-06:08

    All right?

    06:08-06:12

We can't go any further really till we establish that.

    06:12-06:13

    God is impartial.

    06:14-06:31

Old Testament, Deuteronomy 10, 17 says, "For the Lord your God is a God of gods "and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, "and the awesome God who is not partial "and takes no bribe." New Testament, Peter discovered this as well.

    06:31-06:38

Acts chapter 10, says, "So Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I understand that God shows no partiality.

    06:40-06:56

"But in every nation, anyone who fears him "and does what is right is acceptable to him." See, the Bible says that God is impartial and as his children, if you are one of his children, he expects you to be as well.

    06:57-06:59

So again, that's where we're going in the text.

    07:00-07:04

The outline heading is how to love people like God loves people.

    07:05-07:07

So I want you to jot some things down here.

    07:07-07:10

Number one, don't deny your faith.

    07:11-07:14

    Christ followers are not partial.

    07:15-07:31

All right, verse one says, "My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory." So stop there, this is like the whole sermon.

    07:32-07:46

But if you say that you're a follower of Jesus, but you show partiality to people for any reason, It just doesn't make sense.

    07:47-07:54

He says you can't hold on to the faith and also be partial to people for any reason.

    07:54-07:59

It's in complete conflict with what we believe.

    08:02-08:07

It'd be like saying that someone is a Christian abortion advocate.

    08:07-08:10

You'd be like, that doesn't make any kind of sense.

    08:12-08:17

And for somebody to be a Christian racist, it doesn't make any sense.

    08:18-08:20

That's James's point here in verse one.

    08:20-08:21

    Look at verse two.

    08:21-08:34

He says, "For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in." I'll stop there.

    08:35-08:43

As we talk about partiality and all of that, understand that James was addressing the issue that his church needed to hear.

    08:44-08:58

And that was partiality, specifically due to social status, to money. That was the issue that they needed to have addressed. So he gives a hypothetical here, right?

    08:58-09:05

It's a hypothetical situation. He goes, "So, okay, so like a guy comes in wearing a a gold ring and fine clothing.

    09:11-09:22

Sadly, in our culture today, I don't imagine with this crowd, but if I would share this in a different setting, I think there'd be a lot of people that would be like, that's right, shame on the rich man.

    09:23-09:24

    Shame on the rich man.

    09:25-09:27

    Being rich is bad, right?

    09:28-09:30

Right, the bad man is rich, right?

    09:32-09:36

And that's not what he's saying here at all.

    09:38-09:42

A man having money isn't the problem.

    09:46-09:47

    I'm astounded.

    09:48-10:02

I never thought that I'd get at this point in my ministry where I've had so many occasions over the years where people have asked me, "Do you know what Joel Osteen makes?" I'm like, "Why do I care what Joel Osteen makes?

    10:02-10:03

    I'm not married to him.

    10:04-10:05

    Like, why do I care?

    10:07-10:15

But there's this mentality that if somebody has money, that's bad, and that is not at all what James is saying.

    10:16-10:16

    Okay?

    10:17-10:18

    What is he saying?

    10:18-10:19

    Look at verse three.

    10:19-10:35

He says, "If you pay attention to the one "who wears the fine clothing and say, "'You sit here in a good place,' you say to the poor man, you stand over there, or sit down on my feet.

    10:37-10:37

    Stop there.

    10:37-10:39

You see, the problem's not the rich man.

    10:41-10:42

    The problem's you.

    10:43-10:47

The problem is you when you treat people differently.

    10:48-10:48

    Right?

    10:49-10:50

Like, let's cater to this guy.

    10:51-10:54

This guy comes in, he obviously has money.

    10:54-10:58

Like, let's, you know, oh, we want this guy to be a part of our church.

    10:58-10:59

    He's got bags.

    10:59-11:02

You know, that's what the cool kids call having money now.

    11:02-11:04

At least that's what Samuel Gianetti told me.

    11:05-11:07

And, but that was a few months ago.

    11:07-11:09

    So that probably changed, right?

    11:11-11:12

    That probably changed.

    11:13-11:14

They're like, that guy's got bags.

    11:14-11:16

I bet he could really help the church.

    11:18-11:24

And some guy comes in and he's not looking like he has money.

    11:24-11:32

And you're like, Hey, hey bro, I don't really care where you go, but get where you're going, all right?

    11:34-11:41

And understand that the early church was mostly, mostly poor common people.

    11:44-11:52

So you could see why there was a temptation for this kind of bias in the people that James was addressing.

    11:54-11:56

    I'm not saying it's right.

    11:56-12:02

I'm saying I understand why there was this temptation for bias.

    12:02-12:04

You had this church where everybody's sitting around broke.

    12:05-12:14

And a wealthy guy walks in, it's like, "Hey, this guy could really help the church." Right?

    12:16-12:19

You know, contextualizing, and I think, you know, like church planting.

    12:20-12:27

You know, I remember church starting out having, you know, a dozen people, 20 people.

    12:27-12:30

We had new people and we had even less money.

    12:31-12:43

And I'm just saying in that scenario, it would be real easy, like if we had one of our church planting core group meetings where two new people come in and like, oh, hi, nice to meet you.

    12:44-12:44

    What do you do?

    12:44-12:48

Like, well, I'm the president of Allegheny Health.

    12:48-12:53

Like, whoa, oh, please, would you like to sit next to the podium?

    12:53-12:54

    I'm so glad you're here.

    12:55-12:58

And then the other guy comes in and you're like, hey, what do you do?

    12:59-13:03

And he's like, oh, I mop the floors of Pantera bread across the street.

    13:04-13:07

And I'm like, oh, well, you can just, you can wait in the lobby.

    13:09-13:14

You see, you're catering to people based on external things.

    13:14-13:18

    In verse four, not great.

    13:19-13:39

He says, "Have you not then made distinctions "among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts." James says, "Listen, you're making distinctions, "and that's evil because that is not like God at all.

    13:40-13:54

"That's not like God." You know, so often today we hear people virtue signal, whether in person or especially on social media, people wanna say things like, You know, I love everybody the same.

    13:55-13:58

I don't care if you're black or white or purple.

    13:58-14:02

I don't care where you work or what you do or what you have or what you make.

    14:05-14:05

    Is that really true?

    14:10-14:14

Because James is illustrating here, it doesn't really matter what you say, right?

    14:14-14:16

I guarantee you, everybody would say that.

    14:18-14:22

What matters is how you treat people.

    14:24-14:30

Because if the Bible is true, and I believe that it is, every single person that you meet is an eternal soul.

    14:33-14:45

And we each have our unique bodies and life circumstances, and we present a little differently, but we have to see everyone as an eternal soul with equal value.

    14:46-14:56

That's why James says you can't hold onto the faith and be partial at the same time, right?

    14:56-14:59

So how to love people like God loves people, don't deny your faith.

    15:00-15:04

That's just not who we are as followers of Jesus Christ.

    15:04-15:10

Number two, how to love people like God loves people, don't disregard reality.

    15:14-15:19

Rich does not equal great and poor does not equal bad.

    15:23-15:26

Rich does not equal great and poor does not equal bad.

    15:28-15:36

You know, we have this tendency to show favoritism to the rich because rich people are amazing and they only do amazing things.

    15:37-15:38

    True or false?

    15:39-15:45

Well, you're saying false, but we have to push back on this a little bit.

    15:47-15:51

Aren't we just overly fascinated by wealthy people?

    15:54-15:58

Like way too overly fascinated by wealthy people.

    15:59-16:06

Think of when I was a kid, there was a TV show called Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

    16:06-16:08

How many people, show of hands, how many people remember that?

    16:09-16:13

with Robin Leach, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." Remember that?

    16:13-16:16

That was a terrible impersonation, I'll work on it.

    16:16-16:22

And you're like, "Oh, I'm glad we don't have shows like that anymore." Have you ever heard of Cribs?

    16:23-16:24

How many of you heard of Cribs?

    16:25-16:26

    Oh, more of you, okay.

    16:27-16:28

Isn't that like the same thing?

    16:29-16:46

Like, "Hey, here's a wealthy person, let's check out their house." And the reality shows, it's astounding to me that we have reality shows, it's basically like, there's a camera crew in these people's living room and we're watching them watch TV.

    16:48-16:52

Oh, it's an exciting episode today, they're gonna go into the kitchen and fry an egg.

    16:53-16:55

Like, why are we watching this?

    16:57-17:00

Because they're rich and they're fascinating, right?

    17:01-17:15

We have shows like Jay Leno's Garage, where we get to see all of the cars rich man has. And again, there's nothing wrong with having money and having stuff.

    17:16-17:35

I just think it's so funny how, and so interesting, how fascinated we are. So not only do we have this tendency to be fascinated and therefore show favoritism to the rich, the other hand is we just naturally tend to snub the poor.

    17:39-17:47

That whether we would verbalize it or not, there's this tendency to think, well, poor destitute people just really aren't that important.

    17:49-17:51

That's a horrible thing to say out loud.

    17:54-17:55

It's a horrible attitude to have.

    17:57-18:03

There's no reality shows for poor or even regular type people.

    18:08-18:21

So if you're showing favoritism to the rich and you're snubbing the poor, well, James is about to tell us here, you're being ignorant because you just really haven't been paying attention.

    18:22-18:23

    Look at verse five.

    18:25-18:47

He says, "Listen, my beloved brothers, "has not God chosen those who are poor in the world "to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, "which he has promised to those who love him?" James says that God has this track record of going after the poor.

    18:47-19:26

Now listen, I'm gonna be saying this a few times because somebody's gonna like doze off tuned back in and completely missed the context of what we're saying here. Listen, this is a general statement. James isn't saying the only people who have ever had faith are poor people. He is not saying that. OK, James is not saying that he's making an in general statement. In fact, there's a lot of wealthy believers in Scripture, right? Abraham, Job, Solomon, Joseph of Arimathea.

    19:26-19:29

He's just speaking in general, in general.

    19:31-19:35

God has a special regard for the poor.

    19:36-19:37

    Okay?

    19:38-19:39

    Psalm 68, 10.

    19:39-19:49

"In your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy." Psalm 41, one says, "Blessed is the one who considers the poor." God has a heart for the poor.

    19:52-20:00

Proverbs 17, five says, "Whoever mocks the poor insults his maker." It's a pretty serious verse.

    20:05-20:16

And I could spend all morning telling you all the provisions that the Old Testament law had for taking care of the poor, but we're not gonna do that.

    20:16-20:17

    Look at verse six.

    20:18-20:26

He says, the first part, he says, "But you have dishonored the poor man." You've dishonored the poor by not loving them as you should.

    20:28-20:30

Do you think that they matter less?

    20:33-20:35

See James's point, he goes, not to God.

    20:35-20:40

If God regards them as such, how do you think you should treat them?

    20:43-20:51

Oh, for you, those of you that still do think that rich equals amazing, look at the rest of verse six.

    20:51-21:09

He says, "Are not the rich the ones who oppress you "and the ones who drag you into courts?" Again, in general, throughout history until today, how does it normally work?

    21:09-21:15

Do poor people oppress rich people or do rich people oppress poor people?

    21:16-21:18

Which way does that generally go?

    21:19-21:21

The rich oppress the poor, right?

    21:23-21:24

    That's James's point.

    21:24-21:38

Verse seven, he says, "Are they not the ones "who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?" So again, in general, who do we hear mock and blaspheme the name of Jesus?

    21:38-21:41

In general, the poor or the rich?

    21:44-21:45

Well, think about it in these terms.

    21:45-21:55

Go on a mission trip to Vision Appalachia or to Thailand and tell me how much blasphemy you hear among the poor people there.

    21:56-22:06

And then turn on some kind of one of these goofy, you know, these Hollywood award shows where they get on TV and they all pat themselves on the back and applause each other and congratulate each other.

    22:07-22:09

And how much blasphemy are you gonna hear there?

    22:10-22:14

You see, that's James's point in general.

    22:16-22:16

    In general.

    22:20-22:26

James is saying partiality, showing favoritism towards the rich doesn't really make sense when you consider reality.

    22:29-22:45

When you consider history, James says, "Eh, the rich aren't always the best people." So to put somebody up on a pedestal just because they have money, James is saying that's not Not a great idea.

    22:48-22:49

    And the poor?

    22:50-22:54

Well, God seems to have a special place in his heart for them.

    22:56-22:56

    So should you.

    22:58-22:58

    Right?

    22:59-23:01

    So don't disregard reality.

    23:02-23:06

Rich doesn't always equal great, and poor doesn't always equal bad.

    23:07-23:12

And number three, don't disobey God's Word.

    23:14-23:16

    impartiality is a serious sin.

    23:18-23:18

    Look at verse eight.

    23:20-23:33

He says, "If you really fulfill the royal law, "according to the scripture, "you shall love your neighbor as yourself, "you are doing well." Love your neighbor as yourself.

    23:33-23:35

    That's Leviticus 19, 18.

    23:35-23:37

I think Jesus said something about that too, didn't he?

    23:42-23:45

We should love our neighbor as ourselves.

    23:46-23:47

    How, how do we love?

    23:47-23:49

How do we, he says, as yourself.

    23:50-23:52

And I've talked about this before.

    23:52-23:54

    We all love ourselves.

    23:56-23:57

    That's default mode.

    23:57-24:06

And I've shared with you even recently, it just kind of, it kind of irritates me when I hear people say, "You just need to learn how to love yourself." No, you don't.

    24:08-24:11

That's the problem that every single human being has.

    24:11-24:13

We are so in love with ourselves.

    24:13-24:20

We are so self-focused, self-absorbed, all about me, all about my preferences.

    24:21-24:23

Like, well, you know, somebody's gonna say, you know, Pastor Jeff, that's not me.

    24:24-24:24

    I hate myself.

    24:25-24:26

    I hate myself.

    24:26-24:27

    I just hate myself.

    24:27-24:35

That's a form of self-love because you're still putting all of the attention, all of the focus, all the spotlight on yourself.

    24:36-24:39

You're loving yourself by being so self-absorbed.

    24:41-24:48

But God's word tells us that we should love our neighbors as ourselves.

    24:51-24:52

Like, well, how do we do that?

    24:53-24:58

Well, who do you focus on taking care of?

    25:01-25:02

    Yourself, right?

    25:03-26:06

Don't you make sure that you're the one that has eaten, hydrated, you're warm enough. There's just this natural default mode that I'm always looking to make sure that my needs are taken care of. And you see when the Bible says to love your neighbor as yourself. Love isn't just sentimental feelings. Like, "Oh, I care about you. I feel a little warm fuzzies for you." Biblical love is not about the feelings. Biblical love is about meeting needs. And that's why James is bringing this verse up. If you were destitute, just pretend for a second that you were completely destitute and you walked into a church hoping that somebody could help you out somehow, how would you want people to treat you?

    26:11-26:14

Well, that's the way that you need to be treating others.

    26:15-26:20

James says, "If you're doing this, you're doing well." Actually well is a bit of an understatement.

    26:20-26:22

The Greek word could be translated excellently.

    26:24-26:25

    Look at verse nine.

    26:25-26:53

He says, "But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors." He says, "If you show partiality to people, you're guilty of sin and you're guilty of breaking God's law." And look, I can read the room here.

    26:56-27:07

I can tell on the look on a lot of your faces that you're like, yeah, he seems awfully fired up about a subject that just kind of doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

    27:09-27:10

I mean, is it really that big of a deal?

    27:10-27:24

I can understand talking about, you know, lust or talking about, you know, dangers of addiction or talking about, you know, like real hatred, but this I kind of prefer some people over others.

    27:25-27:26

Like, you're like, is this really a big deal?

    27:28-27:30

Like, Pastor Jeff, this is kind of a throwaway sermon.

    27:30-27:32

Can we get back to talking about some serious things?

    27:34-27:41

Well, according to James, this is as serious as it gets.

    27:44-27:45

    Because look at verse 10.

    27:49-28:01

He says, "For whoever keeps the whole law, "but fails at one point, "has become accountable for all of it." This is serious business.

    28:02-28:07

How many laws do you have to break in order to be called a lawbreaker?

    28:08-28:09

    How many?

    28:10-28:12

    Uno, right?

    28:12-28:12

    One.

    28:16-28:23

Breaking, this is what James is saying, Breaking any of God's law is defying God's authority.

    28:24-28:32

So even breaking it at one point, even a point that you don't think is that big of a deal, you're guilty of breaking the whole law.

    28:34-28:40

It would be like if I took a hammer and chisel and went over to the window and said, hey, I'm gonna get you just a little piece of glass off of here.

    28:40-28:50

I'm just gonna get you a little postage stamp-sized piece of glass off of this window for you, and I hold the chisel up there and crank with the hammer, what's gonna happen?

    28:50-28:53

Am I gonna get a little, just one little piece of glass?

    28:54-28:55

The whole thing's gonna shatter, right?

    28:55-28:58

And that's what James is saying about God's law.

    28:58-29:09

If you've broken it at one point, you've basically said, "God, I reject you "as the one who tells me what to do "because I'm not doing this." Well, guess what?

    29:09-29:10

Now you're guilty of the whole law.

    29:12-29:13

    This is serious business.

    29:13-29:14

    Look at verse 11.

    29:14-29:32

For he who said, 'Do not commit adultery,' also said, 'Do not murder.' If you do not commit adultery, but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law." James gives an illustration.

    29:34-29:36

He didn't just pick two random sins.

    29:37-29:39

You know, adultery and murder, do you know what they have in common?

    29:42-29:48

Those were two sins that required the death penalty under Old Testament law.

    29:50-29:57

Like, wow, James put the sin of partiality and very serious company very quickly, didn't he?

    29:59-30:13

And actually, if you think about it, it's in the murder family, Because didn't Jesus say that hatred is the same as murder?

    30:22-30:23

    It's not a small thing.

    30:26-30:28

Listen, and if you walk out of here today.

    30:30-30:33

Say, I, yeah, I see what he's saying, but you know what?

    30:34-30:37

There's just certain type of people that I don't prefer.

    30:38-30:39

    And I'm never going to.

    30:44-30:51

Well, according to James, you not only violated your profession of faith, but you've also violated the word of God.

    30:55-31:14

In verse 12, he says, "So speak and so act "as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty." James says, "You better speak and act "like someone who's going to be judged "because your works matter." And you're like, "Okay, all right, all right.

    31:17-31:23

"Now I know you've gone off the hizzy, Jeff, "because we're not saved by our works, right?

    31:27-31:28

    No, you're not.

    31:29-31:30

You're saved by faith in Christ.

    31:31-31:38

But, and this is going to be a whole other sermon someday, we're going to be judged by our works.

    31:42-31:49

We're going to be judged by our works because works reveal whether you have true faith or not.

    31:51-31:54

And that's the whole sermon next week, so we'll talk more about that then.

    31:55-31:57

But works are the basis of judgment.

    31:59-32:00

And that's why look at verse 13.

    32:00-32:17

He says, "For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy." You see, if you're someone, James is saying, that you don't show mercy to the poor, that shows that you've never known God's mercy.

    32:17-32:18

    You're unredeemed.

    32:19-32:26

You have no compassion, you have no grace, you have no mercy because when you know God, He changes you.

    32:27-32:31

And His spirit makes you love people like God loves people.

    32:33-32:38

So if you don't, you haven't been changed because you haven't been saved.

    32:39-32:44

And the judgment that you're going to receive is going to be horrible.

    32:45-32:50

He says, "Judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.

    32:52-33:17

So, whether the people are rich or poor, whether they're black or white, or whether they're wearing tux or crocs, if you are saved, if you know God's mercy, you can't help but wanna give that kind of love to everyone and anyone.

    33:19-33:20

    without partiality.

    33:21-33:24

    Oh, one more thing.

    33:24-33:25

Look at the end of verse 13.

    33:26-33:32

He says, "Mercy triumphs over judgment." Underline that in your Bibles.

    33:38-34:18

Because when you have God's mercy, when you're someone who has experienced the mercy of God, by faith in Jesus Christ, you don't have to worry about judgment because mercy triumphs over judgment. Or, as our Lord put it, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy." All right, that was the introduction. Here's the sermon. It's Really, verse 1.

    34:21-34:23

You can't hold on to the faith.

    34:23-34:25

    You can't say that you're a believer.

    34:25-34:35

You can't say that you're a follower of Jesus Christ and at the same time show partiality towards people.

    34:37-34:38

    It doesn't work.

    34:40-34:42

    It just doesn't work.

    34:44-34:48

And, you know, we look at some glorious truths in this text.

    34:48-34:52

He talked about breaking the law at one point, you're guilty of the whole loss.

    34:52-34:56

So that makes us all people who are desperately in need of grace.

    34:58-35:05

We see here that God is impartial, so we should not only be thankful for that, but we should imitate his impartiality.

    35:07-35:23

We see that we have no fear of judgment when we know Jesus Christ, "because mercy triumphs over judgment." And I thought, what better way is there to celebrate these truths than by gathering around his table?

    35:24-35:30

So I'm going to ask if our communion servers would come up and our worship team would make their way up.

    35:31-35:37

We're going to invite you to receive the Lord's Supper.

    35:38-35:49

Now, you don't have to be a member of this church to receive the Lord's Supper, but you do have to be a born-again believer in Jesus Christ.

    35:50-35:52

And if you are, he invites you.

    35:54-36:08

So in just a moment, the worship team's going to play and we're going to ask that you, when you're ready, that you would come down the center aisles, receive the elements from Brown up here, And then return to your seat to the outside aisle.

    36:08-36:12

And I'm going to ask that you would hold on to those elements.

    36:12-36:18

And then as a sign of unity in our church, I'll get up and we will take the Lord's Supper together.

    36:18-36:22

Okay, so whenever you're ready, please come and receive.
