    Philippians chapter 2.

    00:06-00:19

You recall in chapter 1, as you're turning there, in chapter 1 the Apostle Paul writing to this church, says, "I am so thankful for you." Church at Philippi. He says he makes his prayers with joy.

    00:20-00:25

And you just really get the sense that the Apostle Paul loved this church. He loved this church.

    00:27-00:31

And then we saw that the gospel is not going to be stopped.

    00:32-00:36

Remember, Paul said, "You know what? Don't worry about my imprisonment.

    00:37-00:48

That's not going to stop the gospel." And I know there are a bunch of people out there preaching with false motives, but as long as Jesus Christ is being preached, the gospel is going forward, and I'm so thankful for that.

    00:52-00:57

And then we talked about living for Christ.

    00:58-00:59

What would you put in the blank?

    00:59-01:02

For me to live is, Paul says to live is Christ.

    01:04-01:06

    And to die is gain.

    01:07-01:11

And he was sort of torn, you know, should I depart and be with Christ?

    01:11-01:11

    That would be better.

    01:12-01:15

He goes, no, it's more necessary that I remain here for you.

    01:16-01:40

And then last week, again we're just reviewing here, but he said, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ." And literally what that means in the original language is this, "You're a citizen of heaven. Act like it." And that was the challenge last week.

    01:40-01:42

How do you think people are acting in heaven right now?

    01:43-01:44

How do you think they're acting in heaven?

    01:46-01:56

Paul's like, "That's how you're supposed to act on the earth." Because that is where your citizenship is, and he'll talk more about that, we'll see, as we go through Philippians.

    01:57-02:03

As we start chapter 2, I'd like to just start this message by just sharing my concerns for the church.

    02:06-02:25

And I suppose these could be said to be concerns for my church, or for the church, excuse me, for the church in general, across the board, looking at the church across the planet, that are even saying, "What about churches "in the Pittsburgh area?" But getting really specific, I wanna share with you my concerns for this church.

    02:28-02:29

    Don't push the panic button.

    02:30-02:34

These would be concerns that I would have for the church back before this church launched.

    02:34-02:40

And if by God's grace I'm here next year, these would still be my concerns for the church.

    02:41-02:43

And really it would boil down to three things.

    02:44-02:46

Three things that I'm really concerned about for the church.

    02:46-02:49

The first one would be lukewarmness.

    02:49-02:51

That would be a concern for me.

    02:52-03:02

When the church gets to the point like, ah, we're established, there's people here, we're paying the bills, time to make the donuts kind of mentality, lukewarmness.

    03:03-03:05

Let's not get too excited about the gospel now.

    03:07-03:08

    Well, that's a concern.

    03:11-03:22

Second concern I would have for this church, for all the churches, but this is the one that the Lord has put me in this position over, would be joyless religion.

    03:23-03:32

That the church sort of becomes, well, this is sort of the thing I do on Sunday and I show up and I get my check mark and God's happy with me as long as I get my check mark.

    03:32-03:37

    And that's a concern.

    03:37-03:40

I never wanna see that be the theme of the church.

    03:40-03:43

Let's just do our duty, get our check mark.

    03:45-03:50

We do what we do because God probably expects us and there's no joy in it.

    03:50-03:51

What are we going for this year?

    03:52-03:54

You know, joy, we're going for joy.

    03:56-03:58

And a third concern would be disunity.

    04:00-04:02

And that is exactly what we're talking about today.

    04:04-04:04

    But disunity.

    04:13-04:16

You're like, oh, that's why he wanted us all to sit in the middle.

    04:18-04:22

But even still, there's a part right down the middle.

    04:23-04:24

    You see that?

    04:25-04:27

    And I don't think it's intentional.

    04:27-04:33

I don't think anybody comes in here on a Sunday morning thinking, gosh, I hope nobody sits in my zip code.

    04:35-04:38

That's just how we are as a culture, right?

    04:38-04:46

I'm going to sit like way over here in this corner because I know that nobody sits anywhere near that area.

    04:46-04:48

I just kind of want to have my space.

    04:50-04:52

    That's a bit of a concern.

    04:53-04:56

We're going to be in heaven together for a long time.

    04:56-04:56

    Did you know that?

    05:01-05:04

But I'm not just talking about the proximity of our seating.

    05:07-05:09

I'm talking about unity in spirit.

    05:13-05:22

And I think that's a hurdle for this church, because we have people that are coming from very different places, from very different backgrounds.

    05:27-05:29

It's going to be a hurdle.

    05:32-05:33

We're going to talk about that today.

    05:34-05:38

You know, Paul in Philippians, what's the whole theme of Philippians?

    05:38-06:10

joy, right? Well, he devotes a whole chapter to the root problem that gets in the way of joy. Do you know what it is? The number one thing that gets in the way of joy. You're like, "Oh, I know what it is. It's persecution, right?" You're not right. You are in fact wrong. That's not it. It's got to be some kind of a hardship. It's got to be some kind I don't know.

    06:12-06:14

    Here's what leads to joylessness.

    06:14-06:15

    Write this down.

    06:15-06:17

    Selfishness leads to joylessness.

    06:19-06:20

We're going after joy this year.

    06:21-06:21

    That's our theme.

    06:22-06:22

    Not just this year.

    06:22-06:24

I hope it carries over to the next year at least.

    06:28-06:30

Paul's devoting a whole chapter to this.

    06:31-06:31

    Please don't miss this.

    06:32-06:33

    Selfishness leads to joylessness.

    06:34-06:35

That's the thing that leads to joylessness.

    06:36-06:40

So if you're sitting here today, Like, you know what, I haven't had a lot of joy in my life lately.

    06:40-06:41

    Do you know why?

    06:41-06:44

It's because you're being selfish in your life.

    06:45-06:53

There's some area of your life, or maybe many areas of your life, that selfish, it's about me, it's about me, it's about me.

    06:53-06:56

When your life is about you, you're not gonna have joy.

    06:56-06:58

    You're not, okay?

    06:59-07:00

    You're just not.

    07:02-07:03

So we're going to take a practice.

    07:06-07:10

I want you to say, "I am selfish." Are you ready?

    07:10-07:16

I'm gonna give you a little countdown, but I want you to say, no, I know what you're thinking, Colleen.

    07:16-07:21

You're gonna say, "Jeff is selfish." No, I am selfish.

    07:21-07:25

You're going to, Jeff knows that he's selfish.

    07:26-07:27

    I know that.

    07:30-07:31

    Are you ready?

    07:31-07:32

    I am selfish.

    07:32-07:35

One, two, three, let's hear it.

    07:35-07:36

    I am selfish.

    07:40-07:49

Correct. Because in the flesh, you're always going to gravitate towards selfishness.

    07:49-07:53

So let me hear it again. You ready? One, two, three.

    07:53-07:56

I am selfish. Try it again.

    07:56-07:58

    I am selfish.

    07:59-08:00

    Some of you aren't convinced.

    08:04-08:06

Well, first of all, it's a universal problem.

    08:08-08:14

If you're a human being, you wrestle with selfishness.

    08:17-08:18

    Where does it come from?

    08:18-08:21

Well, it comes back to really Genesis chapter three.

    08:22-08:26

'Cause jot this down, the root of all sin is selfishness.

    08:27-08:27

    Did you know that?

    08:27-08:32

The root of all sin is selfishness because think of what sin is.

    08:32-08:51

Sin is essentially saying, "I see what God said, "but I have reason to think that I'm going to benefit "by doing something different than what God said." That was the whole lie that got us into this mess.

    08:51-08:53

Remember Satan showed up to Eve?

    08:53-08:54

    Did God really say?

    08:55-08:56

    Did God really say?

    08:58-09:00

Casting doubt on the word of God.

    09:01-09:15

Well, God says, "Don't look at it, don't touch it, "don't think about it, or you'll die." And Satan's like, "You're not gonna die." God knows that when you eat off that tree, you will be, do you remember what Satan said?

    09:15-09:17

    You will be like God.

    09:18-09:23

Satan convinced Eve, and Adam was with her, by the way, God is holding out on you.

    09:25-09:26

    Can you believe that?

    09:26-09:27

God's holding out on you, man.

    09:28-09:30

    You think God's so great?

    09:32-09:35

Here's the thing, God's holding out on you.

    09:36-09:38

"Well, you mean there's something more for me?

    09:39-09:40

    You mean I could benefit?

    09:41-09:52

You mean there's something that I can have apart from what God's already provided?" And we haven't been the same.

    09:54-09:57

The root of all sin is selfishness.

    09:57-09:59

Pick any sin, any sin, pick one.

    10:00-10:05

At the root of the person committing that sin is selfishness.

    10:05-10:08

That's not what I want. I'm not going to do that.

    10:09-10:12

Or God saying to do something, no, I refuse.

    10:14-10:17

    It's selfishness. Still not convinced.

    10:19-10:22

Let me ask you this, what is your most common sin?

    10:23-10:24

    Or your besetting sin?

    10:25-10:29

You know, the Bible says we all like sheep have gone astray, each to his own way, right?

    10:29-10:34

Meaning your sin tendency and my sin tendency are going to be different.

    10:36-10:39

So what's your sin tendency? I want you to think about that for a second.

    10:44-10:47

The root of your sin tendency is selfishness.

    10:49-11:01

The reason you gravitate towards that sin is there's something in your flesh that has convinced you you that there's something that benefits you even though it's contrary to the word of God.

    11:02-11:26

I know God said I shouldn't do this, but I'll benefit from it. Me, me, me. I'll be better off if I do this or if I don't do that. Here's the thing with selfishness though, if you don't think you have a problem, that means you have the biggest one. Because selfishness is easy to recognize in others.

    11:26-11:27

    Did you know that?

    11:27-11:29

We are the master of that.

    11:31-11:35

We're like seal team six when it comes to spotting selfishness in others.

    11:36-11:37

Like, man, I can see where he's selfish.

    11:37-11:39

Well, I can really tell where she's selfish.

    11:40-11:42

We see it in other people in a heartbeat.

    11:45-11:47

The question is, can you see it in you?

    11:51-11:57

Speaking of the upcoming election, isn't this whole selfishness thing, isn't that really the argument on both sides?

    11:57-11:58

    Have you noticed that?

    11:59-12:07

One side says, well, these millionaires are doing these things for tax breaks to themselves, they're being selfish.

    12:08-12:20

Or the other side will say, well, they're trying to railroad political agendas that are ultimately going to cost us financially because they're being selfish for their agenda.

    12:20-12:27

Then again, I'm not making a political platform here, but can you at least acknowledge that both sides are accusing the other of being selfish?

    12:27-12:28

    Can you see that?

    12:28-12:29

    They're being selfish.

    12:32-12:34

We see it in others, we don't see it in ourselves.

    12:38-12:41

Married people, can you see it in your marriage?

    12:42-12:44

    The tendency towards selfishness?

    12:48-12:52

If you're not convinced that you're selfish, first step is get married.

    12:54-12:55

    You'll find out real quick.

    12:56-12:57

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, no, no, no, no, no.

    12:57-12:58

    I can't do that.

    12:58-13:00

That is my time for this.

    13:02-13:03

    You can't put that there.

    13:03-13:05

    That's my space.

    13:07-13:10

You can't buy that because that's what?

    13:11-13:11

    That's my money.

    13:14-13:16

My time, my money, mine, it's mine.

    13:16-13:17

    This is mine.

    13:18-13:19

    Selfishness.

    13:21-13:23

Selfishness says things like this, well, what's in it for me?

    13:24-13:25

    What's in it for me?

    13:27-13:33

Here's another thing selfishness says, all the times that you and I say things like, you know, I deserve, I deserve.

    13:34-13:35

I'm doing this because I deserve it.

    13:37-13:37

    Selfish.

    13:38-13:42

So if you're not convinced that you're selfish, first of all, read Genesis three, second of all, get married.

    13:43-13:48

If you're still not convinced that there's a selfishness problem, What's the next step?

    13:49-13:51

    Have kids, right?

    13:52-13:53

    Have kids.

    13:54-14:01

And you'll learn that there is a self-centered nature attached to the sinful core of our being.

    14:03-14:04

    Have kids.

    14:09-14:11

    Still not convinced?

    14:12-14:15

Show up at Walmart at 5 in the morning on Black Friday.

    14:17-14:32

Isn't it ironic in this country that we devote one day towards giving thanks and then the next day we act like idiots, trampling people?

    14:33-14:40

When I worked at Walmart while I was going to Bible college, literally two ladies got into a fist fight over Tickle Me Elmo.

    14:40-14:41

    I'm not kidding.

    14:42-14:50

fist fight, two ladies, pugilists, fist fighting over what?

    14:52-14:53

    (congregation laughing)

    14:55-14:57

That was great, we gave you another run at that.

    14:57-14:58

    Fist fighting over what?

    14:59-15:00

Oh, she can't do it again.

    15:03-15:05

That sounded nothing like Elmo, but that was really funny.

    15:07-15:07

    (laughing)

    15:08-15:09

I'm gonna go on Black Friday.

    15:13-15:13

    Aw.

    15:15-15:17

Well, now you all know what to get Laura for Christmas.

    15:20-15:22

But you see a real selfishness problem, don't you?

    15:23-15:25

You're like, well, I don't wanna wait till Black Friday.

    15:25-15:27

I'm still not convinced about the selfishness thing.

    15:27-15:29

    Okay, here's your assignment.

    15:29-15:32

After church, drive north on 79.

    15:33-15:40

And when you get towards Zillian Opal and they have the one lane closed, What happens there when you're on the road?

    15:41-15:43

    It's my wife's favorite thing.

    15:43-15:46

I'll tell you, when you're on the road with her and this happens, she giggles and giggles.

    15:46-15:52

But you know how like it tells you ahead of time, you know, right lane is closed, merge left.

    15:52-15:56

And sensible people, what do they do when they see that sign?

    15:57-15:58

    They merge left.

    15:59-16:00

What do the self-centered people do?

    16:01-16:06

They stay in that right lane until that blinking arrow and then insist on cutting in.

    16:08-16:15

And when that happens, my wife and I look at each other like, are we Christians with the attitude that we have towards those people right now?

    16:17-16:18

    That drives me insane.

    16:19-16:20

    Does that drive you insane?

    16:21-16:22

    Well, I'm sorry.

    16:22-16:23

    I'm sorry, Mr. President.

    16:23-16:25

I didn't realize you were on route 79 today.

    16:26-16:30

Here, let's stop traffic so you can cut in at the head of the line.

    16:32-16:33

    I'm gonna stop there.

    16:33-16:34

It's gonna be a long morning.

    16:35-16:35

    (congregation laughing)

    16:38-16:39

Yeah, but I'm really not selfish.

    16:39-16:41

I'm really not a selfish person.

    16:41-16:45

Let me ask you, how many people here have a problem with being late for appointments?

    16:48-16:48

    I do.

    16:50-16:51

    That's selfishness.

    16:51-16:53

Because do you know what you're communicating when you're late?

    16:54-16:57

You're communicating that my time's more important than your time.

    16:59-16:59

    Selfish.

    17:05-17:08

How about being in conversation with someone?

    17:08-17:15

Have you ever been talking to someone and then halfway through the conversation, you realize they're not listening, they're just waiting for you to take your breath so they can jump in?

    17:15-17:16

Have you ever had those conversations?

    17:17-17:20

Maybe that's, maybe you're that person, that selfishness.

    17:20-17:21

I really don't care what you have to say.

    17:22-17:23

You need to hear what I have to say.

    17:25-17:25

    Selfishness.

    17:29-17:31

Like, why are we talking about this?

    17:31-17:32

Well, we're talking about selfishness today.

    17:32-17:34

We're talking about selfishness in the church.

    17:35-17:36

    How does that manifest?

    17:37-17:38

    Here's the top two.

    17:38-17:40

We can talk on and on about this.

    17:40-17:41

    Here's the top two.

    17:41-17:42

    I don't like the music.

    17:43-17:43

    I don't like the music.

    17:43-17:45

That's one of the biggest complaints I hear.

    17:45-17:46

    I don't like the music.

    17:51-17:54

    Or here's the biggest indicator.

    17:56-18:11

When you visit a church, when you visit a church and the first thing you say when you walk in is, "What does this church do for me? My demographic." I'm a single mom. What does this church do for single moms? Selfish.

    18:12-18:18

You know, I'm a college-age student. What does this church do for college-age students? Selfish.

    18:19-18:27

Instead of coming in saying, "What's the mission of the church?" You know, how does this church go about fulfilling the Great Commission?

    18:27-18:31

It's... I'm not really... I'm interested in that, but we'll get to that later.

    18:31-18:33

The first thing I need to know is what can this church do for me?

    18:34-18:36

    That's selfish thinking. It is.

    18:40-18:41

    Are you selfish?

    18:43-18:51

You're like, "Okay, Pastor Jeff, we get it." Say, "We get it." So, are you interested in unity?

    18:52-18:57

Are you interested in seeing what the Bible says about unity, the cure for selfishness?

    18:57-18:57

    Are you interested?

    18:58-19:03

All right, say, "Bring it." Oh, come on, say it like, almost like you're taunting me.

    19:05-19:08

Come on, like you don't think I can back this up biblically.

    19:08-19:10

Say it like you're sticking your chest out.

    19:10-19:12

You can't prove unity in the Bible.

    19:12-19:13

"Bring it." Let me hear it.

    19:14-19:16

    Okay, that was much better.

    19:16-19:18

    Philippians 2, 1 through 4.

    19:20-19:50

says, "So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others is more significant than yourselves.

    19:51-19:58

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

    20:02-20:03

    So let's talk about unity.

    20:04-20:05

    Five, four, three, two, one.

    20:05-20:05

    Are you ready?

    20:06-20:08

    Letter A, what motivates unity?

    20:09-20:10

    Here's five questions to ask.

    20:11-20:13

    Five questions to ask.

    20:19-20:22

And in talking about unity, everybody look up here.

    20:23-20:30

It's tinted, I didn't have one that was clear, but this is full of paperclips, okay?

    20:32-20:38

And when we're talking about unity, there are really only two options that we have.

    20:39-20:42

Now let's pretend that these paperclips are like members of a congregation.

    20:44-20:47

At this point, what's keeping them unified?

    20:49-20:50

    The boxes, right?

    20:50-20:52

The box is keeping these unified, right?

    20:53-21:00

The box, this plastic box is the thing that is holding them together.

    21:01-21:09

So in that case, you could say there's an external force that's holding these together.

    21:09-21:14

There's something outside of themselves that's holding them together.

    21:15-21:18

But this thing's really cool because at the top, there's a magnet.

    21:19-21:26

Now, if you look at these ones, the thing that's holding these together is the magnet.

    21:27-21:32

So you could say that in this case, there's an internal force, right?

    21:33-21:37

It's by virtue of these paperclips being made out of metal.

    21:38-21:49

It's by virtue of what comprises these paperclips, the stuff that they're made of, we can say, that there's some internal force that's holding them together.

    21:50-21:51

    Are you with me?

    21:53-21:59

So my question is, God has designed the church to be unified in which way?

    22:01-22:07

That something external holds us together or something internal holds us together.

    22:08-22:12

But we're going to see in the text, something internal has to hold us together.

    22:12-22:13

And what is that internal thing?

    22:14-22:17

It's the Holy Spirit, you see.

    22:19-22:21

External would be something like this.

    22:22-22:25

The people that come to the church just like Pastor Jeff.

    22:27-22:31

Well, there's a problem with that because Pastor Jeff's not going to be here forever.

    22:32-22:34

Okay, Pastor Jeff's going to die someday, spoiler alert.

    22:37-22:41

So when I do, does that mean the church disbands?

    22:43-22:45

Because now we've lost the external thing?

    22:46-22:57

Or we can say, well, this church, what holds us together is we're all Penguins fans, or we're all into politics, or we're all into, those are externals.

    22:58-23:02

God has called the church to say, there's something that makes you up.

    23:04-23:05

    It's your very nature.

    23:06-23:09

that the magnet here sort of represents the Holy Spirit.

    23:09-23:12

It's the thing that is supposed to bind us together.

    23:12-23:13

    Does that make sense?

    23:14-23:19

My point in all this is God help us if we become a church that's held together by an external thing.

    23:22-23:24

The Holy Spirit needs to hold us together.

    23:26-23:29

So looking back, first of all, what motivates unity?

    23:29-23:30

    Five questions to ask.

    23:30-23:50

Notice he says, "So if there is," Now that word if literally means since you got that right or because he's not saying it's a conditional thing in the sense of, well, if you're one of those people like with the Holy Spirit, he's addressing believers.

    23:50-24:02

So he's saying since, since be like me saying, well, if you have a headache, go take an aspirin, since you have a headache, the remedy for that is an aspirin.

    24:04-24:09

But I'm sure you saw that the appeal is all related to the spiritual experience.

    24:11-24:15

Just breaking these down here, the questions, number one, have you been encouraged by Christ?

    24:17-24:19

Have you been encouraged by Christ?

    24:25-24:27

Let me ask you, have you been encouraged by Christ?

    24:27-24:36

Do you draw encouragement from the person of Jesus Christ?

    24:36-24:37

    Is that encouraging to you?

    24:37-24:40

Is it encouraging that Jesus Christ is God?

    24:41-24:44

And that He is sovereign over the entire universe?

    24:44-24:45

    Is that encouraging to you?

    24:47-24:52

Is that encouraging to know that nothing in our lives is ever like this cosmic mistake?

    24:53-24:54

    Is that encouraging to you?

    24:56-25:02

Is it encouraging for you to know that God never says, "Whoops." God never shows up a minute late.

    25:03-25:05

    God's arm is never shortened.

    25:05-25:06

    Is that encouraging?

    25:06-25:07

Do you draw encouragement from that?

    25:09-25:17

Is it encouraging to you to know that no matter what happens in this life, our best days are ahead of us eternally?

    25:18-25:20

    Is that encouraging to you?

    25:21-25:24

Is it encouraging to know that heaven has been purchased for you?

    25:26-25:29

Actually you've been purchased for heaven is a better way of saying it.

    25:30-25:31

    Is that encouraging to you?

    25:33-25:34

So have you been encouraged in Christ?

    25:35-25:41

Second question is, have you been comforted by Christ's love?

    25:43-25:45

Have you been comforted by Christ's love?

    25:46-25:47

It's all right there in the text.

    25:47-25:51

You see that if there's any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love.

    25:54-25:57

Now this word for comfort means to come closely alongside.

    26:00-26:03

That's what that means, to come closely alongside.

    26:06-26:08

You know, this is what it means.

    26:08-26:13

It's not, you know, "Ken Frederick, I love you." It's, this is what it means.

    26:13-26:15

It's coming up saying, "Hey, you know what?

    26:15-26:17

    This, I'm representing Christ now.

    26:18-26:19

I am never going to leave you.

    26:19-26:21

I am never going to forsake you.

    26:22-26:28

Ken, I am with you in the best times of your life, and I'm going to be with you in the worst times of your life.

    26:28-26:29

I'm right here with you, man.

    26:29-26:32

That's the word for encouragement, or I'm sorry, comfort here.

    26:32-26:34

    It's come alongside.

    26:36-26:39

Let me ask you, have you experienced Jesus Christ that way?

    26:39-26:40

    That's what he's saying here.

    26:40-26:42

Have you experienced Christ that way?

    26:44-26:48

that you've felt down and out, and you've known that he's the friend that sticks closer than a brother.

    26:48-26:49

    Have you experienced that?

    26:55-26:57

    Comfort by Christ's love.

    26:57-26:58

    He's come alongside.

    27:00-27:06

Whether it's been through a death or a job loss or a relational crisis.

    27:07-27:12

Have you experienced Christ's presence coming down that, you know, I'm with you.

    27:13-27:13

    I'm with you.

    27:13-27:13

    It's okay.

    27:16-27:18

Third, have you been walking in the Spirit?

    27:19-27:21

Have you been walking in the Spirit?

    27:21-27:23

He says participation in the Spirit.

    27:25-27:27

Literally it's fellowshipping in the Spirit.

    27:27-27:28

    It's the koinonia.

    27:32-27:35

So there again, have you been somebody who's been walking in the Spirit?

    27:36-27:41

You see in your life, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    27:42-27:53

You know, Galatians five, the fruit of the Spirit, you see the Holy Spirit is manifesting himself through you, but also in mind here is the participation with other believers.

    27:55-28:01

That I've been blessed because of the Holy Spirit's ministry to me through other people, you get that?

    28:03-28:13

Have you been somebody that you can say, you know, when I go to church, I've been blessed by the way the Holy Spirit not only is working in me, but the way the Holy Spirit is working to me through other people.

    28:15-28:22

The way the Holy Spirit works with our worship team and the way the Holy Spirit works to our children's ministry and the people that the Holy Spirit is using.

    28:28-28:33

So if you had this participation walking in the spirit, the koinonia, the fellowship.

    28:35-28:37

Fourthly, have you been blessed by the Spirit?

    28:38-28:48

Look at this last phrase, he says, any affection and sympathy, another way of saying this, have you experienced the Holy Spirit changing you from the inside out?

    28:51-28:58

Do you see that your love for people is growing, your love for ministry is growing, your compassion for the lost is growing?

    29:04-29:14

He says then, verse two, "Complete my joy." That gets us to the fifth question, do you care about your pastor?

    29:19-29:23

Paul says, what's about to come here, we'll complete his joy.

    29:23-29:23

    What does that mean?

    29:23-29:25

Well, this is a pastoral appeal.

    29:26-29:28

Understand that this is a pastoral appeal.

    29:28-29:35

You know, he's saying, church, Please understand how I mean this.

    29:35-29:37

    This is what he's saying.

    29:38-29:42

Have you benefited from the church?

    29:43-29:45

Have you benefited from God's Holy Spirit?

    29:45-29:47

Have you benefited from Jesus Christ?

    29:52-29:58

Because honestly, we're so used to take, take, take, take, take and never give.

    30:00-30:03

And this last thing, you know, do you care about your pastor?

    30:03-30:04

    This is the pastoral thing.

    30:05-30:12

If you're having a hard time wrapping your brain and your spirit around all these things that I'm saying, let me ask you, can you do something for me?

    30:13-30:14

Can you do this for me?

    30:17-30:18

    What do you need?

    30:20-30:26

Well, he says, "By," and then he gives a list of descriptions of what unity looks like.

    30:27-30:28

    So what motivates unity?

    30:29-30:30

Those are the five questions to ask.

    30:30-30:34

Before we get to what does it look like, I want you to see what Paul's doing here.

    30:34-30:37

He's appealing as a parent would do a child.

    30:40-30:45

But, you know, parents, you can appeal to your children in two different ways, right?

    30:48-30:49

    One way is the threat.

    30:51-30:55

If you don't, I'm going to lay the smack down.

    30:57-30:58

    That's an appeal, right, parents?

    30:58-30:59

Is that an appeal you can give to your kids?

    31:00-31:03

    If you don't, kapow.

    31:07-31:13

Or another appeal that you can give to your kids is sort of the appeal that Paul's giving here.

    31:13-31:29

Imagine a parent sitting down with a child saying, you know, son, haven't your mother and I, haven't we always tried to encourage you and everything that you've done.

    31:30-31:44

And son, remember all the times that, whether you were upset about something at school, or you were hurting, or you were confused, haven't your mother and I always tried to bless you and comfort you during those times?

    31:44-31:46

Haven't we always tried to do that?

    31:49-31:58

Son, haven't you been blessed being part of our house that we've provided for you, and we've always done our best to make sure that you had the things that you need.

    32:00-32:02

That's why we want you to be a loving part of this family.

    32:02-32:03

    Do you see that appeal?

    32:04-32:05

That's sort of what Paul's doing here.

    32:08-32:14

He's appealing as a parent to a child, like haven't you benefited from being part of this family?

    32:15-32:20

Well, then I need you to step up in love for this family.

    32:22-32:23

    Do you get that?

    32:24-32:25

    That's the appeal.

    32:27-32:32

So he's assuming some, you know, certain things are true just because these are people that are walking with Christ.

    32:33-32:35

So letter B, what does unity look like?

    32:35-32:36

    Four marks to examine.

    32:37-32:39

So these are five questions to ask.

    32:41-32:44

If you've answered yes to any of these questions, we're moving on here.

    32:44-32:45

    What does unity look like?

    32:45-32:46

    Four marks to examine.

    32:51-32:54

First of all, he says, complete my joy, number one, of being of the same mind.

    32:55-32:56

    Write down same mind.

    32:56-32:57

    It's a recurring theme.

    32:57-32:59

We saw it in chapter one, verse 27.

    33:03-33:09

Same mind, it's thinking alike, true.

    33:10-33:12

And God's word certainly would determine the standard.

    33:12-33:16

But understand when he talks about the same mind, it's more than just thinking alike.

    33:16-33:18

Write this word down, it's attitude.

    33:20-33:21

    It's attitude.

    33:24-33:26

This is what he's talking about here.

    33:27-33:29

He's like, you know what guys, this will complete my joy.

    33:29-33:31

You guys all need to have the same attitude.

    33:36-33:39

Now I've been in pastoral ministry, now I've told you this before, 15 years.

    33:39-33:40

Why do I tell you that?

    33:40-33:42

Not like I get a yogi button for that or anything.

    33:43-33:45

But just to say I've been around the block a couple of times, okay?

    33:46-33:48

    And I've seen church conflict.

    33:51-33:59

They're extremely rare that there's conflict in the church over theology.

    34:00-34:01

    Honestly, it's rare.

    34:02-34:12

I can probably count on one hand the number of times that there's been some sort of a conflict upheaval over the way we interpret a particular passage of Scripture.

    34:13-34:14

    Very rare.

    34:16-34:19

I would say that probably comprises 1% or less.

    34:19-34:23

What makes up the 99% is attitude.

    34:26-34:29

That's the problem, when somebody's attitude gets sideways.

    34:32-34:36

And this is biblical, 1 Corinthians 3, 3, listen to what Paul says here.

    34:36-34:54

"For while there is jealousy and strife among you, "are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?" See, he's saying disunity is always spirit versus flesh type thinking, never spirit versus spirit type thinking.

    34:57-34:59

So he's saying to have a common attitude.

    35:01-35:02

    Have a common attitude.

    35:04-35:06

    Secondly, he says same love.

    35:07-35:08

    Same love.

    35:08-35:12

He says being of the same mind, having the same love.

    35:12-35:13

    What does that mean?

    35:14-35:38

this, "Love for all of God's people equally." That's what that means. It means you love everybody equally. Same love. And it's true, there are friendships, there are, you know, just by virtue of whether it's ministry or past relationships, that there are different friendships in the church, that's true. But same love means you love everybody equally.

    35:41-36:54

his same soul. He says, "Being in full accord." Actually, this could literally be translated one-souled, S-O-U-L-E-D. Like, I think Paul made that word up. I don't know if that word's anywhere else in the Bible. He's like, "You need to have one soul." And here he's referring to passion. So, first, do you have the same attitude, church? You're coming here with attitude? Do you love everybody equally? And next question, you have the same passion. Do you have the same passion? Then fourthly, what's the fourth thing? He says, "and of one mind." Like, oh that's same mind. No, really this means minding one thing or on your outline write down same purpose. You have the same passion and you have the same purpose. You're like, okay I kind of get that. What's that mean?

    36:54-36:59

Here's what that means. Do you know what the vision is for Harvest Bible Chapel?

    36:59-37:20

Do you know? Do you know what our vision is here? Well let's do a quick review. Do know this you're out. There's the door back there. There's one there and one back there. I'm just kidding. You don't have to leave, but you have to learn it.

    37:20-37:42

What's the mission? To glorify God, right? Through the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment. All right, how many of you You're like, "Oh yeah, I knew that." A couple of you, "Great, great." That's the mission of the church.

    37:42-37:43

Why is that the mission of the church?

    37:45-37:46

Anybody wanna take a swing at that?

    37:46-37:47

    Why is that our mission?

    37:49-37:50

Yeah, because Jesus commanded that, right?

    37:51-37:52

    Well, what should we do?

    37:52-37:53

    What should we do?

    37:53-37:55

I got an idea, let's do what Jesus said to do.

    37:56-37:59

Jesus said to go make disciples and that's the mission of the church.

    38:02-38:04

You're like, "Well, a lot of churches "do that very differently.

    38:04-38:05

"How does this church do it?

    38:05-38:09

"How does Harvest Bible Chapel do it?" Well, this is the vision for the church.

    38:09-38:19

And understand this, because when we're talking about unity, what I'm asking you now is are you on board with this vision?

    38:22-38:25

The way it works in Harvest Bible Chapel is this.

    38:25-38:29

You should be bringing people to church that you know that need the Lord.

    38:30-38:32

    Okay, we're not sheep stealing.

    38:32-38:33

    We're just offering green grass.

    38:34-38:38

but you need to look for people that you know that need to know the Lord.

    38:39-38:41

And you bring them to church with you.

    38:42-38:51

And here, as people experience worship, which can lead an unbeliever to faith, by the way, what's that, 1 Corinthians 11?

    38:52-38:54

Don't think that that's not an evangelistic thing.

    38:54-38:59

People being in the presence of true worship, God is really among these people.

    39:00-39:01

    God uses that.

    39:02-39:12

So you bring your friends, your family, your coworkers, people you know that need to hear the Lord, to know the Lord, you bring them to church.

    39:14-39:21

And then while we're here, we do things like, we have party with the pastor to try to let people know here's what kind of church we are up front, okay?

    39:21-39:23

No bait and switch, here's what we are.

    39:23-39:25

We're glad that you're here, we want you to be a part.

    39:25-39:31

And then we do the two week membership class where we share the gospel and we talk about what is a disciple of Jesus Christ?

    39:31-39:32

    What's a disciple?

    39:33-39:34

By the way, what's a disciple?

    39:34-39:42

Someone who worships Christ and walks with Christ and works for Christ, right.

    39:45-39:50

And then we encourage everybody to be a part of a small group, why?

    39:54-39:58

Because if our mission is to make disciples, how does that happen?

    39:58-40:00

    That happens in small groups.

    40:00-40:02

That's why you hear us saying You gotta join a small group, join a small group.

    40:03-40:05

    That's where discipleship happens.

    40:06-40:14

That's where you're pouring into people's lives and other people are pouring into you and you're meeting together and getting in the Word together and getting in prayer together.

    40:15-40:16

    That happens in small group.

    40:20-40:23

What else do we have for the vision of Harvest Bible Chapel?

    40:23-40:25

You're gonna be hearing more about this.

    40:25-40:28

Every small group doing an outreach together.

    40:29-40:35

Okay, so the small group that you're in, you should be involved in some sort of outreach ministry together.

    40:35-40:57

We're gonna talk about that with all of the small group leaders and hosts, but you should have a plan, whether it's, well, you know, our small group is gonna work at the soup kitchen, or we're gonna be part of Urban Impact, or we're going to hand out tracks at the hockey game if they ever have hockey again, or, you know, this is what our small group does to do outreach ministry.

    40:59-41:08

And Dan Thompson right now is working with getting some things ready for some overseas missions with some Harvest Bible chapels in Nicaragua.

    41:13-41:15

So do you understand the vision of the church?

    41:18-41:19

    Do you understand that?

    41:20-41:24

How many people think, okay, I understand where you're going with this, Pastor Jeff, do I have to do it again?

    41:25-41:26

    How many people understand this?

    41:27-41:40

Okay, you come to church, you bring your friends and family, you know, we share the gospel, we minister to them, involved in small groups where discipleship happens and where outreach happens.

    41:41-41:45

That's where the local outreach happens and then the international thing, Dan Thompson's working on that.

    41:48-41:50

So here's where I'm going with this.

    41:50-41:51

That's the vision of the church.

    41:56-41:57

But you need to know that up front.

    41:58-42:03

Because what we're calling for you, this is are you on board with the vision of the church?

    42:04-42:07

Okay, you understand it, are you on board with that?

    42:08-42:09

Like, yeah, I'm not really into small groups.

    42:11-42:12

Then you're probably in the wrong church.

    42:13-42:14

    You understand that?

    42:15-42:17

Because that's part of our vision.

    42:19-42:20

Like, yeah, I'm not really into outreach.

    42:23-42:26

Then you're probably in the wrong church because that's part of our vision.

    42:28-42:30

    Like your music's too contemporary.

    42:31-42:36

You're probably in the wrong church because this is what we're about.

    42:37-42:40

And you see, this was the appeal that the apostle Paul was making to the Philippian church.

    42:41-42:43

And this is the appeal that I'm making to you.

    42:44-42:50

And if my closeness in proximity, though it's just a little bit, helps add to the urgency.

    42:51-42:57

What I'm just sharing with you is my heart to say, I want you on board with this vision.

    42:57-43:09

You have to know what it is, and you have to subscribe to it to say, I understand if this is a church about making disciples, this is my part in making disciples.

    43:11-43:11

    Are you with me?

    43:13-43:15

You're not going to stick around if you don't have this mindset.

    43:17-43:35

This might be your last Sunday, or you might stick around for a couple of months, but if you're not interested in discipleship and evangelism and passionate worship and passionate crying out to God in prayer, you might do better at another church because that's what we're going after here.

    43:39-43:42

Like I'm so with you, Pastor Jeff, at least I hope that's what you're saying.

    43:43-43:46

So letter C, how do I promote unity?

    43:48-43:51

So we have five questions to ask, and you answered yes to all those.

    43:52-43:55

Four marks to examine, and I hope that you're looking at that in your life.

    43:55-44:01

You know, do I have the same attitude, the same love for people, but the same passion and purpose?

    44:03-44:04

So how do I promote unity?

    44:04-44:06

Well, here are three statements to practice.

    44:07-44:08

    Look at verse three.

    44:11-44:16

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit.

    44:16-44:17

    Conceit.

    44:20-44:25

So number one, I am not going to promote myself.

    44:29-44:31

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:32-44:34

This is the first thing you need to practice saying.

    44:34-44:34

    So you ready?

    44:36-44:37

    One, two, three.

    44:37-44:40

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:40-44:42

Okay, that was good right out of the gate.

    44:42-44:42

    Let's try it again.

    44:43-44:43

    One, two, three.

    44:44-44:46

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:46-44:47

    We're practicing this, okay?

    44:47-44:49

Let's do it again, one, two, three.

    44:49-44:51

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:52-44:52

    Let's try it again.

    44:53-44:55

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:55-44:56

No countdown, we're just going into it.

    44:56-44:57

    You ready?

    44:57-44:59

I am not going to promote myself.

    45:00-45:01

Come on, we're gonna say it with conviction.

    45:02-45:04

I am not going to promote myself.

    45:06-45:07

    Keep practicing that.

    45:07-45:08

Did you see it in the text?

    45:10-45:13

Actually, in the Greek, there's no verb.

    45:13-45:18

You know, there's no word "do." You know what Paul's saying?

    45:18-45:25

You know, literally from the Greek, he's saying, "Nothing from rivalry or conceit." That's what he's saying.

    45:25-45:28

"Nothing, nothing from rivalry or conceit.

    45:31-45:33

I am not going to promote myself." Well, what's rivalry?

    45:34-45:37

That's the desire to promote yourself.

    45:39-45:43

It's winning by destroying someone else.

    45:43-45:49

rivalry, winning by destroying someone else. Last political statement of the day.

    45:49-46:34

Isn't that political ads? Every political ad, right? I've said this to Aaron so many times and I've had conversations with some of you others. I would rather have a candidate say, "Hi, my name is Jeff Miller and here's what I stand for." Boom boom boom boom boom. That's why you should vote for me. How many of those ads do you see? Seriously, how many of those ads do you see? Abby says one. Yeah, I think I saw one. I think we saw the same one, Abby. Let me ask you another question. How many ads are "don't vote for this guy because..." and then they always have the most unflattering picture of the guy, you know what I'm talking about?

    46:34-46:36

They get this picture where he's like...

    46:37-46:37

    (congregation laughing)

    46:39-46:40

    (man speaking indistinctly)

    46:42-46:43

How many of those do you see?

    46:44-46:46

Like all of them but the one, right?

    46:48-46:50

That's what he's talking about rivalry.

    46:50-46:56

We have a tendency to make ourselves look good by tearing someone else down.

    46:57-46:59

I was talking to Mark Bloomingdale about this.

    46:59-47:03

I'm like, "Why do they do that?" And Mark's answer is, "You know why they do that?

    47:04-47:34

because it works. And he's right. They're not dummies. They do that because it works, but I'm not saying it's right, because actually the Bible says it's wrong. Paul says, "Nothing from rivalry." I'm not going to tear other people down to make myself look better. Then he says, "Nothing from conceit." What's conceit? Well, that's empty glory, that's having a high opinion of yourself.

    47:35-47:39

Those are all the things that I do to let people know how much I rule.

    47:40-47:41

    God help us.

    47:43-47:47

All my little statements about I did this and I accomplished this and look at what I did.

    47:50-47:58

So how much should we be motivated by rivalry or conceit?

    47:58-47:59

    Well, he says nothing.

    48:00-48:02

I did an extensive study on this Greek word.

    48:02-48:03

Do you know what it means?

    48:04-48:05

    It means nothing.

    48:07-48:08

    It means nothing.

    48:09-48:14

Not like try not to do too many things, nothing.

    48:16-48:18

Get a great quote from C.S. Lewis.

    48:18-48:19

    Listen to this.

    48:20-48:32

He says, "We must not think that pride is something that God forbids because he's offended at it, or that humility is something he demands as do his own dignity, as if God himself were proud.

    48:33-48:41

The point is, he wants you to know him, wants to give you himself.

    48:44-49:08

And he and you are two things of such a kind that if you really get into any touch with him at all, you will in fact be humble, delightedly humble, feeling the infinite relief of having for once got rid of all the silly nonsense about your own dignity, which has made you restless and happy all your life.

    49:09-49:14

He says, "I wish I'd gotten a bit further with humility.

    49:16-49:39

If I had, I could probably tell you more about the relief and the comfort of taking off the fancy dress, getting rid of the false self with all its, "Look at me, and aren't I a good boy?" While it's posing and posturing to get near it, selflessness, to get near it, even for a moment, it's like a cold drink of cold water to a man in the desert.

    49:40-49:51

"And how much of my misery comes from my reputation "and my position and my thoughts about me?" It's a great quote.

    49:54-49:56

So understand, I am not going to promote myself.

    49:57-49:57

    Go ahead and say it.

    50:02-50:05

You sounded a lot more convinced actually before the sermon.

    50:07-50:08

    Maybe I should stop now.

    50:11-50:14

This is an act of faith, understand that.

    50:15-50:16

This is an act of faith.

    50:19-50:22

The Bible says, if you exalt yourself, you will be what?

    50:23-50:23

    Humbled.

    50:25-50:28

And if you humble yourself, you will be exalted.

    50:29-50:30

    Do you believe that?

    50:32-50:40

This is an act of faith because selfishness says, selfishness says this, if I'm not selfish, I'm going to lose something, right?

    50:40-50:41

    Isn't that what selfishness says?

    50:42-50:48

If I'm not selfish, if I'm not looking after my interests, nobody else is and I'm gonna miss out.

    50:50-50:51

    That's what selfishness says.

    50:54-51:01

You're like, "Well, if I'm not looking out for myself, who is?" And what's the answer, church?

    51:02-51:04

The answer is everybody else, right?

    51:05-51:05

    Ultimately God.

    51:06-51:10

But in the church, we're going to get to that part.

    51:12-51:14

But let's just start with this.

    51:14-51:15

I am not going to promote myself.

    51:16-51:18

    Try it again with conviction.

    51:18-51:18

    Go.

    51:20-51:21

    (congregation chattering)

    51:21-51:25

I'm gonna hold you to that because I just heard you say that like 12 times.

    51:27-51:28

Okay, here's something else to practice.

    51:28-51:29

    You ready?

    51:32-51:33

You are more important than me.

    51:39-51:40

    Let's try that.

    51:42-51:43

    You ready?

    51:44-51:48

I'm gonna model it for you and then I'm going to give you the chance.

    51:48-51:49

    you're practicing this.

    51:51-51:52

You are more important than me.

    51:54-51:55

    Now it's your turn.

    51:56-51:57

    One, two, three, go.

    51:58-52:00

You are more important than me.

    52:00-52:01

    Let's try it again.

    52:01-52:02

    Go.

    52:02-52:04

You are more important than me.

    52:05-52:07

Try it again, but like you're really convinced of it.

    52:07-52:07

    Go.

    52:08-52:11

You are more important than me.

    52:13-52:14

    Do you believe that?

    52:16-52:18

    See, the answer is humility.

    52:19-52:32

Paul says again, "But in humility, "count others more significant than yourselves." You better have that highlighted in your Bible because I'm going to check when you leave today.

    52:33-52:35

And if it is not highlighted, I will highlight it for you.

    52:36-52:37

    Underlining is acceptable, Ken.

    52:39-52:44

"In humility, count others more significant than yourselves." What's humility?

    52:44-52:46

Okay, get this on the table.

    52:46-52:49

Humility is not thinking badly of yourself.

    52:50-53:01

I'm a loser, I stink, nobody likes me, nobody should like me, I'm just nothing but a piece of dirt.

    53:03-53:05

    That's not humility.

    53:05-53:06

    You know what that is?

    53:08-53:09

    That's actually pride.

    53:11-53:16

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, humility is not thinking of yourself at all.

    53:17-53:17

    You get that?

    53:18-53:36

Because when you're obsessed with, I stink, I'm a loser, I'm nothing, I'm the most least important person, when you're stuck in that mindset, it's an over-preoccupation with yourself, which is not humility.

    53:38-53:40

It's not thinking less of self.

    53:40-53:42

It's not thinking of self at all.

    53:46-53:52

So I want you to turn to the person beside you and I want you to say, "You are more important than me." Go.

    53:57-54:01

I know we're creating a lot of problems in some households because we have a lot of husbands and wives sitting together.

    54:03-54:13

If that's the case, I want you, husbands, I want you to take your wife's hand and I want you to look in each other's eyes and you're both going to say it.

    54:13-54:13

    You ready? Go.

    54:18-54:20

I got nothing to do till four o'clock.

    54:23-54:25

You guys better have this down before Steelers come on.

    54:26-54:28

You are more important than me.

    54:28-54:29

    Come on, say it.

    54:32-54:32

    Okay.

    54:35-54:38

You're like, Jeff, why are you so like adamant about this?

    54:38-54:40

Because it's in the Bible, man, that's why.

    54:40-54:46

And because we get all sideways because we walk in the church thinking, "This place couldn't run without me.

    54:47-54:49

I'm the most important person in this church.

    54:49-55:00

That church is gonna suffer when I take my ball and go to the church down the street because nobody's more important in this church than I am." Wrong.

    55:02-55:17

That's working against unity because Paul says in humility, "Count others more significant than yourselves." Honestly, honestly, I'm probably the most expendable person in this church.

    55:18-55:20

Like, well, you're the pastor, isn't that the most important?

    55:20-55:22

Actually, no, because you know what?

    55:22-55:36

If I keel over this afternoon, it would just be a matter of calling the fellowship and there'd be some other guy that James McDonald trained that's prayed up and ready to go and he'd be up here Sunday chasing the same thing that we're chasing here together, all right?

    55:37-55:46

But get the idea out of your head that you're so important all about you, instead we look around and say, you're more important than me.

    55:48-55:49

    You're more important than me.

    55:51-55:52

I have a hard time with that.

    55:55-55:56

How do I get into that mindset?

    55:56-55:58

I wanna just think about this.

    56:00-56:03

You don't know what's in another person's heart, do you?

    56:05-56:15

But you know, you know the history of what's in another's one heart and whose is that?

    56:17-56:17

    It's yours, right?

    56:18-56:20

So with that in mind, let me ask you a question.

    56:21-56:23

Who was the worst sinner that you've ever met?

    56:26-56:29

There's really only one answer to that question, isn't there?

    56:31-56:32

    I don't know what's in your heart.

    56:34-56:37

The only thing I know is looking back in my life to say I know what's been in my heart.

    56:39-56:44

So the only heart that I have the inside scoop on that I have full disclosure on is mine.

    56:45-56:53

So my assumption is, I probably have the worst track record of anybody in this room.

    56:54-56:57

And if you're honest with yourself, you'll have a similar attitude.

    57:01-57:06

So it's easy with that attitude to look around and say, yeah, these people are more important than me.

    57:09-57:15

I was just a horrible sinner saved by grace, but they're more important than me.

    57:17-57:18

    Okay, one more thing.

    57:18-57:18

    Can you handle it?

    57:20-57:21

    So much to memorize.

    57:23-57:24

    Look at the last thing.

    57:27-57:30

Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also to the interest of others.

    57:31-57:33

So the last question is, what can I do for you?

    57:36-57:45

Remember I told you before, It's always an indicator when somebody comes into the church and says, "What can this church do for me?" In Philippians 2, 4, what does Paul say?

    57:45-57:56

You don't just walk in with that attitude. You walk in and say, "What can I do for you? What can I do for you?" And that's my prayer as we're moving forward with, you know, shouldering the weekly kingdom responsibility.

    57:57-58:04

And we have a lot of areas where we need people to step up and work as this ministry grows and moves forward.

    58:05-58:10

We need people to step up and say, "What can I do for you?" What can I do for you?

    58:10-58:12

So are you ready to give that a swing?

    58:14-58:15

    It goes like this.

    58:16-58:17

I'll model it and then we'll give you a try.

    58:20-58:21

What can I do for you?

    58:23-58:24

    All right, you got that?

    58:26-58:27

    Three, two, one, go.

    58:28-58:29

What can I do for you?

    58:30-58:31

All right, let's try it again.

    58:31-58:31

    Three, two, one.

    58:32-58:33

What can I do for you?

    58:34-58:35

    Don't need a countdown, go.

    58:37-58:38

    I'm so glad you asked.

    58:44-58:46

Set yourself aside and give yourself for others.

    58:49-58:53

This isn't just a matter of what's right and wrong, of what's good, better, and best.

    58:56-58:58

God says you will actually benefit from this.

    59:00-59:06

So five questions to ask, four marks to examine, three statements to practice, two choices.

    59:07-59:08

These aren't on your outline, John, down at the bottom.

    59:09-59:10

    Two choices.

    59:10-59:15

What happened was I had the outline done, I thought, oh, I had a countdown thing going, I didn't even realize it.

    59:16-59:18

So we gotta have a two and a one, right?

    59:18-59:19

    Two choices.

    59:21-59:34

Two choices, you can leave here today insisting on I should get my own way in life, I deserve to get my own way in life, People should cater to me.

    59:35-59:37

    Everything still revolves around me.

    59:38-59:39

That's one choice that you have.

    59:39-59:46

You can leave thinking that you're all that in a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.

    59:51-01:00:00

Or your other choice is to say, you know, the Bible says that I was bought with a price.

    01:00:00-01:00:02

    I am not my own.

    01:00:04-01:00:09

You know, the Bible says to be a disciple, we're talking about disciples here, right?

    01:00:11-01:00:15

Jesus said, "If anyone would be my disciple," what was step one?

    01:00:15-01:00:15

    You remember?

    01:00:16-01:00:18

"Let him," do you remember step one?

    01:00:19-01:00:27

"If anyone would be my disciple, let him," if you know it, shout it out, "deny himself." That's step one.

    01:00:28-01:00:28

    Why?

    01:00:29-01:00:33

Because as long as you're in your own way, you're not going to come to Christ.

    01:00:34-01:00:35

    It's giving up.

    01:00:36-01:00:39

And that's what we talked about this baptism service.

    01:00:39-01:00:40

That's the whole picture of baptism.

    01:00:43-01:00:44

    The whole picture of baptism.

    01:00:44-01:00:50

When you go underwater, I remember Ken, you were baptized, you know, our last service at Northway.

    01:00:50-01:00:52

When you go underwater, do you know what you're saying?

    01:00:52-01:00:53

    Ken's dead.

    01:00:55-01:00:56

    That's what you're saying.

    01:00:56-01:01:24

dead. I'm identifying with the death of Jesus Christ. My old man has been crucified with Christ. And when you come up out of the water, what you're saying is, "Christ is alive in me. My life is Christ." That's the whole picture of baptism. I'm no longer, I'm not even on my own radar anymore. My life is Christ.

    01:01:26-01:01:27

    So these are my choices.

    01:01:27-01:01:33

I can promote myself, and ultimately I'm going to be miserable.

    01:01:36-01:01:37

Because here's what you're going to find.

    01:01:41-01:01:43

    You are not interesting enough.

    01:01:44-01:01:46

    You are not captivating enough.

    01:01:47-01:02:01

You are not exciting enough to maintain any level of enthusiasm for promoting yourself for any long period of time, you're going to make yourself miserable.

    01:02:05-01:02:07

    Go ahead and promote yourself.

    01:02:08-01:02:10

Make your life all about yourself and you will be miserable.

    01:02:13-01:02:20

Your other option is you can spend yourself for others and you can experience joy.

    01:02:21-01:02:22

    Those are your choices.

    01:02:26-01:02:29

    One example, finally one example.

    01:02:30-01:02:37

So who's the ultimate example in pouring myself out for the benefit of others?

    01:02:37-01:02:44

Who's the ultimate example of I'm going to humble myself for the purposes of God and for the benefit of others?

    01:02:44-01:02:45

Who's the ultimate example of that?

    01:02:46-01:02:48

You're like, well, my grandma was really good at that.

    01:02:48-01:02:50

She might've been, but she's not the ultimate example.

    01:02:51-01:02:56

I have a next door neighbor who he's real, I'm sure he's fantastic, but that's not the example.

    01:02:56-01:03:03

Who is the ultimate example of this type of I'm giving myself for you?

    01:03:03-01:03:09

Who is the ultimate example of humility for the purposes of God?

    01:03:09-01:03:09

    Who is it?

    01:03:10-01:03:11

    It's Jesus Christ.

    01:03:12-01:03:15

And next week, that's the sermon.

    01:03:17-01:03:23

You know, read ahead, but it's all about having the mindset that Jesus Christ had.

  • 00:00-00:25

We're gonna be picking up in verse 27. Last week where we left off, the Apostle Paul says, "To live is," what? "Christ, and to die is gain." So he was saying, "You know, I would actually prefer to die, and, you know, I'm actually chained to a guard.

    00:25-00:33

I would prefer to die and be with Christ, but it's more necessary that I stay for you.

    00:36-00:48

So today we're going to pick up in verse 27, and before we get to the text, I wanna just to kinda show you what Paul's thinking here, why he's writing some of the things that he's writing.

    00:49-00:51

I know some of you know my dog.

    00:51-00:52

    Let's get that picture.

    00:52-00:53

    This is Gordy.

    00:54-00:55

    (dog whining)

    00:57-00:58

He's really, oh there he is.

    00:58-00:59

    That's Gordy.

    01:01-01:04

    Actual size, actually.

    01:06-01:13

But, something that I've learned is that I'm really lame at training dogs.

    01:14-01:16

    Now, he's a boxer.

    01:18-01:22

How many of you have had boxers or had to deal with boxers?

    01:22-01:22

    Okay, a lot of hands.

    01:23-01:24

How many of you have boxers right now?

    01:24-01:25

I know some of you do.

    01:25-01:26

    OK.

    01:27-01:27

    All right.

    01:29-01:31

So you'll back me up on this.

    01:33-01:42

Boxers are like coiled springs electrically charged on steroids, right?

    01:42-01:53

Like they are constantly just-- growing up, we had an English bulldog, and that thing was basically a watermelon with legs, only it wasn't quite as active as a watermelon.

    01:55-02:03

So I went from having this English bulldog that was lazy, and you actually had to carry the thing and put it in bed.

    02:03-02:05

I mean, it was this lazy bulldog.

    02:05-02:12

And then, you know, to having these boxers, and these things are just like constantly on the go.

    02:12-02:16

Well, I've tried to train them.

    02:17-02:30

I had one before this one who had passed away, and we got this one a few years ago, But actually a man from our church, Mark Bloomingdale, was teaching me some things about training.

    02:30-02:33

He's not a dog trainer. I'm gonna get that out.

    02:34-02:40

But he was telling me some things that I was doing wrong in training the dog.

    02:42-02:46

And he explained to me that dogs are actually pack animals, right?

    02:46-02:49

Like wolves. And in every pack you have what?

    02:50-02:57

You have the leader of the pack, which was also a really cool song back in the day.

    02:57-03:23

Remember that song? But you have the pack leader, and unless that dog identifies you as the pack leader, there's going to be some tension on over who is the actual pack leader. So Mark had told me that I need to assert myself and work with the dog in such a way that he knows I'm the leader of the pack and he is not.

    03:26-03:45

Well here's the problem. We've been working with Gordy, but the problem that we've discovered is that through all of this process of establishing the pack leader, we found out in our home that I am not the pack leader.

    03:47-03:50

And actually, Erin is the pack leader.

    03:51-03:58

Okay, my wife Erin is the pack leader in our wolf pack.

    04:00-04:03

And here's how we know this.

    04:05-04:22

When Erin goes somewhere, if she has to go to the store or whatever, and I'm staying at home working on things, as soon as the door shuts, Gordy does things that he would never do when she's in the house.

    04:24-04:25

    And it's hilarious.

    04:25-04:32

The door will shut and immediately I'll hear the click of his toenails on the hardwood floor.

    04:32-04:34

I'll hear click, click, click, click, click.

    04:36-04:38

    He jumps on the bed.

    04:39-04:42

What are the chances that dog would jump on the bed when Aaron's home?

    04:43-04:48

He knows that she would turn him inside out if he jumped on the bed.

    04:48-04:50

As soon as she's gone, he's on the bed.

    04:50-04:53

The other day, she went somewhere and I was at home working.

    04:54-04:54

    Where is the dog?

    04:55-04:56

I went out to look for him.

    04:56-04:57

    He was on the couch.

    04:58-04:59

That dog has never been on the couch.

    05:02-05:11

The thing is, when the pack leader's there, Gordy knows what he's allowed to do and what he's not allowed to do.

    05:12-05:19

When Aaron's not there, Gordy's like, I'll just do whatever I want.

    05:20-05:21

    Who's gonna stop me?

    05:21-05:22

    What's his name?

    05:26-05:28

Well, why are you sharing this?

    05:28-05:29

    Well, here's why.

    05:29-05:35

Look at verse 27, because this idea is really what Paul is talking about here.

    05:37-05:54

He says, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ," here it is, "so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit." And then he goes on, we're going to get to that.

    05:55-05:57

But see, this was the Apostle Paul's concern.

    05:58-06:01

My concern is that you're walking with Christ.

    06:03-06:04

    Whether I'm there or not.

    06:06-06:09

You're not allowed on the couch, Gordy, whether I'm there or not.

    06:10-06:20

And Paul's saying, "Church of Philippi, you need to be conducting yourselves in a godly way whether I'm there or not." That's what I want to hear.

    06:22-06:26

You remember in elementary school, when the teacher would leave the room?

    06:27-06:30

I don't know how it was at your school, but I'll tell you how it was at our school.

    06:31-06:57

When the teacher would leave the room, it would turn into absolute chaos. Kids would be dancing on desks and throwing things and doing all kinds of crazy things. Then you'd have the one kid like posting lookout to see when the teacher was coming back, so that when the teacher walked in her room, every kid was sitting in the chair perfectly quiet. And it's the whole idea of, listen, this isn't just putting on a show like, "Oh, Paul's coming to town. We better act real spiritual.

    06:59-08:01

Paul's coming to town. We better show him that, you know, he didn't waste his time with it. Let's put on a good face for Paul. Paul, because it doesn't matter if I'm there or not." So let's look at the text here. We're gonna break it down. The first word, every word's important by the way. Every word's important. The first word in verse 27 is "only." Now you need to circle that word in your Bible because this is emphatic in the Greek. This is a very important word. What he's saying is this is the bottom line. With everything I'm telling you, listen, this is it. This is what I need to tell you. That's what he's saying by starting with the He says, "Only let your manner of life..." Now this is an interesting word in the Greek.

    08:01-08:04

I'm not here to give you a Greek lesson, but when it's important, it's important.

    08:04-08:07

And it helps us. If you miss this, you're gonna miss the rest of the sermon.

    08:09-08:16

But the Greek word for manner of life is "polis." It's actually the word for city.

    08:22-09:47

So when he's talking about, he goes, "Listen, let your polis, your manner of life..." What he's saying is you need to be a good citizen. What does a good citizen do? A good citizen does what is for the good of others. A good citizen reflects the values of the state. And the reason Paul would use this word is Philippi was part of Rome. And Roman citizens were very proud of that. Okay, Roman citizens would have had Roman names, Roman clothes, they would have prayed to Roman deities, they would have sworn to the Roman Emperor. You know, to be a part of Rome was a big deal. And they were very proud of that. Sort of like being from Pittsburgh and you travel, you know, make you pack my penguins jersey, right? Make sure you pack my Stiller shirt." You know, it's that sense of, "I'm proud of where I'm from." But in the Roman culture it was even more than that, if you can believe that. Actually, in Acts chapter 16, talking about Philippi, it says, verses 20 and 21, "When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, "These men are Jews and they are disturbing our city.

    09:47-10:14

They're disturbing Philippi. What are they doing that's so bad?" Well, listen to this, "They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice." What they're saying is, "They're not acting like Romans and that's a problem. That'd be like somebody visiting you here from out of town and they don't know the customs.

    10:15-11:00

They put the coleslaw beside the sandwich, not on the sandwich, and you're like, "That's not how we do it here." They show up wearing their Ravens jersey. You're like, "Seriously, are you trying to get beat up?" But that's what on here. It's that's not how we do it as Roman citizens. So I think you're starting to see Paul's point. Actually in Philippians 3 20 Paul says, "But our citizenship is in heaven and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." You You are a citizen of heaven.

    11:04-11:08

And a citizen of heaven reflects the values of heaven.

    11:10-11:13

So look back at your text here, 127.

    11:13-11:29

He says, "Only let your manner of life, let your citizenship be worthy." Now don't get tripped up on that.

    11:29-11:34

You know, some people could read this and say, wow, I need to try harder to be a Christian.

    11:35-11:39

That's what the Christian life is about, is just trying to be a better boy or trying to be a better girl.

    11:40-11:46

And you know, maybe I, this word worthy could also be translated appropriately.

    11:49-11:55

I mean, not like translated appropriately, translated, air quotes, appropriately.

    11:58-12:18

So don't miss this. He's saying, "Act how is appropriate for a citizen of heaven." You're like, "Well, what does that mean?" Think about it this way. How do people in heaven act?

    12:19-12:26

If you were to take a field trip to heaven today and come back and and do a report on how people were acting in heaven.

    12:27-12:28

    What would you report?

    12:34-12:37

Live as a citizen of heaven, even while you're on the earth.

    12:38-12:38

    Here's what that means.

    12:39-12:41

People say about you, you know what?

    12:42-12:45

She seems like she really cares about people.

    12:46-12:50

Well, that's appropriate because she's a citizen of heaven.

    12:53-12:55

You know, that guy, he's really honest.

    12:55-12:56

    That guy's really honest.

    12:56-12:57

    Well, you know what?

    12:57-12:58

    That only makes sense.

    12:58-12:58

    Why?

    12:59-13:01

Because that's how citizens of heaven act.

    13:01-13:01

    They're honest.

    13:03-13:05

    Well, that guy's really trustworthy.

    13:05-13:08

You know, if he says he's gonna do something, he does it, and you can always trust him.

    13:09-13:09

    Well, that makes sense.

    13:10-13:12

That's how citizens of heaven act.

    13:17-13:18

    You know, she's really forgiving.

    13:19-13:22

She's had to deal with a lot of stuff in her life, and she has been so forgiving.

    13:23-13:28

Well, that makes sense because that's how citizens of heaven act.

    13:29-13:30

That's exactly what Paul's saying here.

    13:30-13:33

You know, you people are so proud of your Roman citizenship.

    13:34-13:47

You're citizens of heaven, actually, in the rest of the phrase, he goes, "Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ." He says, "Your citizenship is with the gospel." That's the citizenship you need to be focused on.

    13:53-13:58

Basically, it's a life consistent with what you preach.

    13:59-14:01

    It's practicing what you proclaim.

    14:04-14:21

And you're like, "Oh yeah, here comes another one of these sermons." This is so important, Christians, because we, I think, sometimes more than any other people on the earth, we miss the forest for the trees here.

    14:22-14:24

And we become the biggest hypocrites on the planet.

    14:28-16:24

I was talking to another harvest pastor this week, just getting caught up, and, "Hey, going on in your church and what's going on in my kind of thing and he told me there was a man in his church who was really bent out of shape over the elephant room thing. Remember the elephant room? This guy was so bent out of shape over the elephant room and he would not let it go. He was just constantly like, "I can't believe they would talk to TD Jakes!" He just would not let it go and this pastor friend of mine was like, "Dude, seriously, the elephant room was like when when did that happen like seriously it's time to move on I understand your concern I don't agree with your concern it's time to move on but this guy still you know putting stuff on the internet and still you know getting people ripped I can't believe the elephant room I gotta you know it's wrong just this guy had built this whole platform this whole soapbox this anybody that stands still for more than three seconds is going to hear about my displeasure concerning the elephant room. Well then this man's wife put on Facebook, this Mr. Anti-Elephant Room guy, his wife put on Facebook, "What do you call a man that cheats on his wife?" "Answer, my husband." We are so guilty of that. We get running around and our feathers are ruffled and our britches are in a bunch because of some stupid little campaign and we're missing the obvious thing. Like I'm glad that kind of stuff doesn't happen here, really.

    16:25-16:43

We're all concerned about, you know, we got this election coming up and we concerned. But with all the campaigning you're doing for one political party or another, how much energy and attention are you putting into your marriage?

    16:44-16:55

How much energy and attention are you putting in to raising your kids? How much energy and attention are you putting into reaching out to that lost person that you work with?

    16:57-17:29

How much energy and attention are you putting into your integrity. We're not as unlike this guy as we think. That's why Paul says, "You're a citizen of heaven. Act like it. Act like it." They're not going behind people's backs in heaven. They don't act like that.

    17:32-17:47

There's not hatred and bitterness in heaven. They don't act like that. And you don't act like that either. They're not lying to each other in heaven. There are no secret sins in heaven. They don't act like that. You're a citizen of heaven.

    17:54-18:10

Act But when did being immersed in a culture of social programs and politics and inner church quarreling, when did all this stuff replace the gospel?

    18:13-18:16

Citizen of heaven, you're a citizen of heaven, let's act like it.

    18:16-18:18

Like, okay, well, can you be more specific?

    18:19-18:22

Actually, yeah, let's continue in the text.

    18:22-18:25

    things today. Three things.

    18:26-22:03

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit. So the first word on your outline is "stand." we will not be moved. Stand firm. Actually, this is a military term. It refers to a soldier on his post. A soldier on his post meaning this is where I'm taking my stand and the only thing that's removing me from this position is somebody killing me. That's what that word means. I'm taking my stand. So Paul tells the church be an appropriate citizen, walk worthy. How? First of all, stand firm. He says in one spirit. Now he's not talking about the Holy Spirit here. Certainly the Holy Spirit is behind the writing of this and Holy Spirit is who empowers the church. We get all that, but he's probably not talking about the Holy Spirit here. Actually, in your Bible the word "spirit" is probably written with a small "s" as it is in mine. Literally what it just means is "attitude." Stay on your post and everybody keep the same attitude. Now when we get to chapter 2, We're going to be talking a lot about unity. So this is sort of a down payment that Paul's giving us. But Paul's saying, "Here's the report that I want to hear, that you're not abandoning your post. That's what I want to hear. I want to hear that you guys took your post, you're standing on your post, and you're not abandoning your post. When I was in Bible college, I had longer hair and I was on the soccer team and I was informed that if I did not get my hair cut, I was going to be thrown off the soccer team. And my response was, "Oh, we don't need to fight about it, I'll just quit." And I did. Like, I don't want it to be like a big issue, so I'll just quit. This "so easy to quit" attitude, we're all just too quick to quit. You know, whether it's our television provider, our cell phone carrier, our marriage, we've learned to program ourselves to say we don't really need to stick to anything. If I don't like something, I'll just quit. If I don't agree with something, I'll just quit. Paul here says, I want to hear that you're standing firm, that you're not moving, that you're not bailing. And again, he's talking about unity in the church. It's protecting... what's unity in the church?

    22:03-22:13

Well, we're gonna see this as we go through Philippians, but one of the things, it's protecting relationships. It's saying, you know, sometimes it's worth but to have the hard conversations.

    22:14-22:17

And I've lived in this area most of my life and I've shared this with you before.

    22:19-22:26

Is this like a, this culture thing or is this sort of like permeating the United States or I don't know.

    22:28-22:37

But what I'm finding more and more, at least in this area, it's easier to avoid people for years than to have one hard conversation with people.

    22:38-22:39

    Isn't that true?

    22:42-22:45

You know, instead of sitting down saying, "Sam, you know what?

    22:45-22:47

That offended me when you said that, man.

    22:47-22:50

That really bothered me and I think you're out of line to say that.

    22:50-22:57

We need to talk about it." Instead of having that conversation, I'll do whatever I can to avoid Sam for the next five years.

    22:58-23:03

So maybe then if I run into him, we'll just act like nothing happened, right?

    23:03-23:04

    Isn't that what we do?

    23:05-23:06

Now, seriously, is that like here?

    23:06-23:07

Is that-- Did they do that out in Philadelphia?

    23:09-23:11

Okay, so maybe it's a Pennsylvania thing.

    23:12-23:12

    All right.

    23:13-23:14

    They do that in Ohio?

    23:15-23:16

    Oh gosh, it's spreading.

    23:18-23:19

    That bothers me.

    23:20-23:22

Sit down and have the conversation.

    23:27-23:31

I'm blocking you from my friends list on Facebook, which a lot of people did after last week's sermon.

    23:31-23:34

You realize that whole beginning was just a joke.

    23:37-23:38

    Protect relationships.

    23:38-23:40

Don't be afraid to have hard conversations.

    23:41-23:42

    Unity's worth it.

    23:44-23:50

Okay, can we, you know, if this whole thing is spreading, can we be like the start of, let's start something new.

    23:51-23:59

Let's start a new thing where if we have an issue with someone, we're going to lovingly go to the person to talk about, well, you know, that's not really new.

    23:59-24:01

Jesus actually told us to do that.

    24:01-24:02

    But here's something new.

    24:02-24:04

Let's be people that actually do it.

    24:05-24:05

    How about that?

    24:08-24:10

    So protecting relationships, standing firm.

    24:10-24:11

    What else does that mean?

    24:12-24:19

Jot this down, "standing on the truth of God's word." We're going to see that also, especially when we get to Philippians chapter three.

    24:20-24:21

There is a danger of false teachers.

    24:29-24:31

And Paul says you need to stand firm.

    24:33-24:38

Stand firm and not moving from sound doctrine.

    24:42-24:46

Now, it's easy, it's easy to evaluate sermons here.

    24:48-24:53

Because at Harvest Bible Chapel, what we do is we go through a book at a time, we take a chunk at a time.

    24:54-24:55

    That's what we do.

    24:55-26:28

Last year, if you were with us, we went through Colossians and we started at Colossians at the very first verse and we ended at the very last verse. That's what we're doing this year with Philippians. We start at the first verse, we're going to end with the last verse. Why do we do that? Because if I just preached about what I felt like preaching about, I'm not going to give you the whole counsel of God. I'm probably only going to lean in certain areas and only give you certain things and you're gonna get a very unbalanced diet. We believe that God wrote this book, so in preaching it, we're going to go through and cover all of the issues that God covers in his word, and we're going to do them in the order that he covers them. Not random topics, not "let me tell you some things that I was thinking about this week." Let's go through God's word a verse at a time. So here's how you evaluate sermons. Go home, take the passage that we looked at together, and ask yourself, "Is this what the passage says?" That's how you evaluate a sermon. You know, sometimes people evaluate sermons based on, "I don't like the personality of the preacher," or "I didn't like his illustration," or whatever. That's not how you evaluate a sermon. You Now, is this what the text says?

    26:28-26:42

You should be able, after the sermon, to go through these verses and say, "Oh, I see why Jeff said that, because that's just what it says here." Honestly, that's my evaluation every week.

    26:44-26:58

Every Sunday afternoon, I go back to say, "Did I just say what the text says?" That's the only thing that the church can be unified on.

    26:58-27:05

We have an objective source of truth that becomes our rallying point.

    27:07-27:08

    So first of all, stand.

    27:08-27:10

    We will not be moved.

    27:11-27:12

    We will not be moved.

    27:12-27:19

Secondly, to live a worthy life, to be an appropriate citizen, so to speak, right down the word strive.

    27:19-27:20

    We will not quit.

    27:24-27:28

He says, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit.

    27:29-27:37

Look at the next phrase in verse twenty seven, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.

    27:40-27:45

So first we had this military term of standing, not abandoning the post, striving.

    27:45-27:47

    Here's actually an athletic term.

    27:49-27:50

    That literally means sweating.

    27:51-27:53

We're going to sweat it out together.

    27:53-28:00

So working together, side by side-- all right, help me with the illustration here.

    28:00-28:10

When you think of athletics and you think of athletes that are lined up side by side, sweating together, working towards a common purpose, what do you think of?

    28:12-28:13

    No, not tennis.

    28:15-28:16

    Football, right?

    28:17-28:17

    She said football.

    28:18-28:18

    Football, right?

    28:21-28:24

Common goal, laying it all out.

    28:27-28:29

And there is power in unity.

    28:29-28:39

But understand this, when we talk about unity, as we'll be doing a lot, because that's what comes up in Philippians, understand it's not unity for unity's sake.

    28:40-28:42

Like, hey, let's just all try to get along, why?

    28:44-28:45

Just for the sake of getting along?

    28:47-28:49

The end game, what is it?

    28:51-28:53

Striving side by side for what?

    28:53-28:55

He says, for the faith of the gospel.

    29:00-29:02

But here's the thing, church, what disrupts unity?

    29:06-29:12

Almost all the time, what disrupts unity in a church is something subtle.

    29:14-29:19

When there's disunity in the church, when there are people upset and there's discord.

    29:24-29:33

Many times what I've seen personally and in talking with other pastors, you know, you kind of look back and say, what exactly is the problem?

    29:35-29:42

You see, a lot of times it's not blatant, gross, obvious sin because that's easy.

    29:45-29:50

You know, so-and-so, you know, is in sin and we're, you know, we're dealing with it in a biblical way.

    29:50-29:53

That'd be an easy thing to sort of put your finger on.

    29:53-30:01

But when there's disunity in the church, somehow it manages to creep in.

    30:03-30:14

It manages to creep in and manifest itself through criticism, through blaming, through accusing, through bitterness.

    30:19-30:21

Now, Steelers play at one today.

    30:22-30:24

Now, are they wearing those throwback uniforms today?

    30:25-30:27

Is that today they're wearing those things?

    30:27-30:29

    Have you seen these things?

    30:31-30:33

All right, all in favor of the throwback uniforms.

    30:34-30:34

    Anybody?

    30:37-30:38

    A couple of you.

    30:38-30:41

    Darren, you like those things.

    30:47-31:13

Wow, I am shocked. I saw a picture this week, it was Ben and Kiesel, like, standing on a field wearing these things, and I thought they lost a bet. Well, one o'clock, the Steelers start. Imagine that James Harrison doesn't care for the throwback uniforms.

    31:17-31:39

They're like, "You're wearing them." He's like, "All right." And he only goes at it sort of half-hearted today. Could you imagine? I'm only going at it half-hearted today. And somebody says, well that that's like Taylor's gimmick, don't take that.

    31:41-33:25

Or Big Ben doesn't like Mike Tomlin's coaching. So he's like, you know what, if this is how it's gonna be, I'm just gonna do my own thing. You know, Ben in the shotgun formation and they snap him the ball and he punts it. It's like first and ten. Like what are you guys doing? Well why isn't that going to happen? Why aren't you going to see Harrison playing half-hearted? Why aren't you going to see Ben punting on first and ten? Because they don't care. It's not going to happen because they're striving side by side for a common purpose. There's the legendary Herb Brooks that says the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back. He was talking about hockey, but I'd like to share that with you, talking about the church. So let me ask you, what's more important? What's more important to you, unity or being right? Unity or my preferences, unity or my opinions. Don't sweat over the differences. You need to sweat over the commitment to unity. And in order to do that you need to see the big picture. That's why Paul says, "Striving side by side for what? For the faith of the gospel, the faith of the gospel.

    33:27-33:28

You have to get that big picture.

    33:28-33:32

Why are we doing what we're doing here for the faith of the gospel?

    33:37-33:40

    So stand, strive and finally.

    33:42-33:43

    Let's talk about suffering.

    33:45-33:46

    Verses 28 through 30.

    33:49-33:53

He says, "And not frightened in anything by your opponents.

    33:54-34:00

This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation and that from God.

    34:00-34:36

For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe in him, but also suffer for his sake, engage in the same conflict that you saw I had, and now hear that I still have." So lastly on your outline, write down, "Suffer. We will not be afraid." Living as a citizen of heaven, let me ask you, how many people in heaven right now do you think are wrestling with fear?

    34:36-34:37

    How many?

    34:39-34:41

How many people in heaven are wrestling with fear?

    34:43-34:45

Hold up the universal sign for how many?

    34:47-34:47

    Zero.

    34:48-34:49

    Why?

    34:50-34:51

    Because God's right here.

    34:52-34:53

What do I have to be afraid of?

    34:54-34:58

    But God's right here too.

    35:00-35:05

We don't see him as they do in heaven, but that doesn't mean his presence isn't here.

    35:07-35:09

Do you know the Bible says, "Fear not"?

    35:09-35:41

how many times? I know some people, the Bible says 365 times fear not, one for every day of the year. That's not true. That was in that movie, wasn't it? Like Facing the Giants or something, don't they say that? I've gotten emails that say that. That's not true. It's actually somewhere around a hundred times. Your Fear not. Fear not.

    35:42-35:43

    That's what Paul says here.

    35:45-35:47

Not frightened in anything by your opponents.

    35:47-35:48

Now what's his statement all about?

    35:48-36:02

He says, "This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God." Well, Tertullian, the church historian, was converted because he watched a slave girl face death with courage.

    36:03-36:05

That's the kind of thing he's talking about here.

    36:09-36:15

Seeing the suffering of God's people and those inflicting the suffering, there's a sense of I am wrong.

    36:17-36:17

    She is right.

    36:19-36:24

I realize now that I'm on the wrong side of this.

    36:26-36:31

Now, when we talk about suffering here, we're not speaking of suffering in general, like for example, sickness.

    36:32-36:38

I'm still getting over this flu, this fever that I've had all week, you can probably tell.

    36:41-36:44

But this isn't suffering for the sake of Christ.

    36:46-36:52

I'm not talking about, "Well, I've been having financial problem." That's suffering for the sake of Christ. No, that's called life.

    36:53-36:55

We're all going to suffer in those areas.

    36:55-36:57

This is a specific kind of suffering.

    36:57-37:00

You see, at the end of verse 29, it's suffering for His sake.

    37:01-37:08

It's suffering that's a direct result of making your stand with Jesus Christ.

    37:09-37:11

It's the suffering that results for that.

    37:11-37:18

I'm just going to stop here and say, honestly, I have no idea how to preach on these persecution passages here in America.

    37:19-37:39

I mean, I've preached a lot of sermons over the last 15 years, and you get to these passages about persecution, about suffering for the gospel of Christ, about, you know, standing up and, you know, sharing the gospel and facing backlash because people hate Christ, people hate the gospel.

    37:41-37:44

I don't know how to preach that in America, I just don't, I'll be honest with you.

    37:45-37:48

We are so clueless, all of us.

    37:52-37:58

So there again this week, I was looking at this, Oh, here we have one of these persecution passages.

    37:58-37:59

    What do I...

    38:00-38:02

And I was thinking about this moment, I'm like, what do I even say?

    38:05-38:13

Do I really think that there are people sitting in this auditorium that are enduring anything that resembles persecution?

    38:19-38:26

So much of scripture teaches that citizens of heaven will be mistreated by those of this world.

    38:29-38:34

And I think we're doing such a good job of being undercover that the world can't spot us.

    38:39-38:41

So I don't know what to tell you about persecution.

    38:45-39:14

other than to say, "If you really act appropriately as a citizen of heaven while living on this earth, that is going to bother the people of this earth to the point that you will be persecuted." And when that happens, when that happens, here's a word for you.

    39:16-39:24

Verse twenty nine says, for it has been granted to you that word granted is the same word where we get the word grace.

    39:27-39:31

We think suffering is bad, persecution is bad.

    39:31-39:35

Actually, persecution is a gracious gift of Christ.

    39:38-39:47

So when you suffer because of your commitment to Christ, throughout eternity, you're going to look back at that as a grace.

    39:50-40:00

Acts, chapter five, verse forty one, when the early disciples were persecuted, they didn't run home and lock the door and say, this church thing isn't working.

    40:01-40:12

Do you remember what they did? Back handsprings all the way down the avenue saying, "We were considered worthy to suffer for Christ." And here's all I can tell you about that.

    40:12-40:14

You'll know what that's like when it happens.

    40:17-40:23

But if your faith hasn't ever brought some level of suffering, that's a problem.

    40:27-40:29

How can you not expect suffering for faith?

    40:32-40:35

We're redeemed people but still living in a cursed world.

    40:47-40:55

When you stand as a citizen of heaven and you start saying things like, "You know what? Maybe some other people at work are taking some shortcuts.

    40:57-41:00

I'm not going to do it." And suddenly you're the odd man out.

    41:03-41:05

You're going to start to know.

    41:08-41:13

When you begin to say, "You know, I'm not going to watch my family and friends make decisions that are going to destroy their lives.

    41:14-41:30

I'm going to speak up and say something to them." And your family and friends hate you because you had the gall to speak up and say, "You know, I think you're making a bad decision "because this is what the Bible says." And now all of a sudden, you're the odd man out, you're going to start to know.

    41:34-41:36

"I'm going to reflect the values of heaven.

    41:36-41:50

"I'm going to live worthy no matter what the cost is." As a citizen of heaven, We need to see ourselves as tourists on the earth.

    41:51-41:52

    You know that?

    41:54-41:56

So here's a good citizenship statement.

    41:58-42:01

If it's easy, it isn't right.

    42:04-42:08

And if it's right, it isn't easy.

    42:11-42:13

So would you bow your heads with me?

    42:17-42:20

And this is a call for all of us, as I've already said this morning.

    42:21-42:25

The last thing we wanna do here is play games with this.

    42:31-42:39

If you truly consider yourself, if I truly consider myself as a citizen of heaven, how can that not affect our conduct?

    42:45-42:54

So the word to all of us, myself included, our manner of life must be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    42:54-42:57

Are we living appropriately as citizens of heaven?

    43:04-43:05

    Are we standing firm?

    43:10-43:13

Have you made the commitment to say, I'm not going to be moved?

    43:21-43:22

    Strive together.

    43:28-43:28

    Have you made that commitment?

    43:29-43:31

    I'm not a church goer.

    43:36-43:38

When I show up, it's to work.

    43:38-43:41

It's to strive side by side.

    43:43-43:46

It's to work together for the sake of the gospel.

    43:54-43:56

    And to suffer victoriously.

    43:57-43:58

    Not afraid.

    44:01-44:03

People that are in heaven aren't afraid.

    44:05-44:06

    Why should I be afraid?

    44:09-44:13

The worst thing that anybody could do to me is actually the best thing anybody could do to me?

    44:14-44:16

What, kill me and send me straight to heaven?

    44:19-44:48

I will not fear when living as a citizen of heaven offends people, not because I'm obnoxious, not because I'm trying to be some self-righteous Bible-thumper, but simply for being someone who represents Jesus Christ, someone who simply wishes to represent the values of Heaven while I'm here on the earth.

    44:50-44:51

    That's a worthy life.

  • 00:00-00:02

Are you in Philippians chapter 1? Alright.

    00:04-00:07

Let's get the God's Word together this morning. Let's pray.

    00:10-00:27

Father in heaven, we just pause and thank you for giving us your Word, a clear, objective revelation concerning yourself.

    00:31-00:33

Father, might we take your Word as seriously as you do?

    00:37-00:46

Might our hearts be open for the transforming work that your Word and your Holy Spirit accomplishes.

    00:50-01:03

We thank you for the children and for the finances, Father, as we've just, we just received our offer and we pray that it would be used to your glory and honor.

    01:04-01:13

For the children, Father, might this be a time where they are getting instruction from your word while their parents are doing the same.

    01:14-01:18

Glorify your name, Father, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

    01:21-01:25

Alright, how many people here have a Facebook account?

    01:27-01:33

How many have a Facebook account? Maybe a better question would be, who does not have a Facebook account? Let's ask that one.

    01:34-01:37

How did it seem like there were just as many hands? Really?

    01:38-01:40

Alright, let me see the people that have a Facebook account again.

    01:40-01:42

    Now, who does not?

    01:44-01:44

    Really?

    01:46-01:47

    This room is like 50/50.

    01:48-01:48

    Do you see that?

    01:50-01:50

    Wow.

    01:54-01:57

Well, for many of you, this is going to be informational.

    02:02-02:06

For those of you who do not have a Facebook account, you know what it is.

    02:07-02:17

It is basically this online thing where you make your own page, and you can put your picture up, or pictures of your kids, or pictures of your dog, or whatever.

    02:17-02:28

And you can update whatever you want to put, and it goes on this news feed so that when you go on this website, you can actually see what all your friends are doing.

    02:32-02:45

And when I originally got on Facebook, I thought It was such an amazing thing for me because I had friends from high school and I had friends from college and I had friends from wrestling and I had people from different churches and ministries.

    02:45-02:53

And it was a great way to stay in contact with everybody to see what they were, oh, did you know so-and-so that you went to Bible college with?

    02:53-02:58

They, you know, got married and all these other friends from this other church just had a baby.

    02:58-03:01

And it was a great way to stay caught up with friends.

    03:04-03:08

But to be honest with you, it's not been near as cool lately.

    03:09-03:19

Now, the people that actually have a Facebook account and check their feed and things like that, would you agree with me that Facebook has just been kind of lame lately?

    03:19-03:20

    Would you agree with that?

    03:21-03:26

It used to be fun to get on and see what people were doing, but now it's just become-- well, here's what it's become.

    03:30-03:32

These are some friends that you have on Facebook.

    03:36-03:41

And I thought about, you've heard of the book, seven people you meet in heaven, right?

    03:42-03:46

Well, this is like seven people you meet on Facebook.

    03:46-03:47

    I'm still working on this.

    03:50-03:53

But these are people that you run into on Facebook now, which makes it kind of lame.

    03:57-03:59

First of all, everyone has a food friend.

    04:00-04:01

Do you know what I mean?

    04:01-04:09

person that takes a picture of their meal right before they eat it. Now people that get on Facebook, you guys know who I'm talking about? Is that somebody here?

    04:10-04:36

Because if it is, and that offends you a little bit, I'm sorry, but they're the people that like, they take a picture of their meal and I just have to, I don't, I just have to wonder what goes on there. Like, "Kids, it's time to eat!" You know, and the kids come running, they sit down at the table and, "Oh boy, this looks good, "Mom, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah." "Oh, I know, right, Mom, I'm supposed to pray, right?" "No, no, no, no, did you take a picture of that?"

    04:37-04:37

    (congregation laughing)

    04:38-04:43

Because your friends are gonna be wondering what you had for supper, all right?

    04:43-04:45

So did you take a picture of your meatloaf?

    04:46-04:48

We have our food friends on there.

    04:51-04:53

We also on there have our workout friends.

    04:55-04:58

These are the people that are constantly updating you on their latest workout.

    04:59-05:01

    I just ran 4.4 miles.

    05:01-05:04

I just benched, you know, 103 pounds.

    05:04-05:07

And I just did this and I just did that.

    05:07-05:09

And, you know, here's my weight progress.

    05:13-05:24

I just think these things are interesting because we're putting on the internet things that we're basically telling the whole world, things that we wouldn't tell people if we ran into them on the street.

    05:24-05:25

    Isn't that kind of weird?

    05:27-05:35

Like seriously, we're telling the whole world things that we wouldn't, if you ran into an old high school buddy walking down the street, "Hey Joe, good to see you.

    05:35-05:37

"By the way, had some meatloaf last night."

    05:39-05:39

    (congregation laughing)

    05:41-05:43

Yeah, here's a picture of it, let me get my wallet.

    05:44-05:45

    Oh, are those your kids?

    05:45-05:47

Yeah, yeah, these are my kids, but I wanna show you my meatloaf.

    05:47-05:52

And oh, by the way, I'm benching like 103 now.

    05:55-05:56

Well, then you have your political friend.

    05:57-06:02

You know, the person that's just-- and I have many political friends on both sides of the fence.

    06:04-06:10

It's this candidate lied about this, and this candidate lied about this, and this-- and you know the political friend?

    06:10-06:12

You know, you guys know what I'm talking about?

    06:13-06:16

Everything is just, here's why you should vote for this person.

    06:16-06:22

And that one's not near as funny as the next one.

    06:23-06:25

    How about cryptic message friend?

    06:26-06:29

It's the person that puts up an update that you know is for one person.

    06:30-06:31

You know what I'm talking about?

    06:31-06:39

It's the person they put up a post that's like, you think you can trust some people, and they stab you in the back.

    06:40-06:42

I will always hate you for this.

    06:46-06:49

And if you've known me at all, I take things very personally.

    06:50-06:51

I always assume that's about me.

    06:53-07:14

And I'm just like, "Oh my gosh, I haven't seen Carl in like 20 years and what have I done?" But they put this message out that's like, "I hope this one person is reading this because this is for you." And then you have your religious friend on Facebook, your religious friend.

    07:15-07:22

Some of you are like, "Yeah, Pastor Jeff, that's you." Well, I don't mean like posting scripture.

    07:23-07:27

I mean like posting the cheesy pictures of Jesus.

    07:29-07:33

Sam's favorite, I know this is one, he sends it to me all the time and I actually wish he would stop.

    07:34-07:46

But there's a picture of Jesus standing, he's like in his robes and stuff, but he's standing outside this very modern looking house and he's knocking on the door of this very modern looking house.

    07:47-07:51

And you think the caption underneath would be like, you know, "Is anybody home?

    07:51-07:53

    I forgot my keys again.

    07:53-07:55

You know, what did you say, Laura, Mrs. Miller?

    07:55-08:01

Can Jeff come out and play?" But it's all these pictures of Jesus in modern contexts.

    08:03-08:05

A lot of them are pretty silly.

    08:06-08:08

Is there anybody I haven't offended yet?

    08:09-08:13

Because we'll catch you with this last one, the animal lover.

    08:16-08:18

You know, the person that has to post pictures of kittens.

    08:19-08:27

You know, there's a kitten hanging on the clothesline, and the caption underneath says-- hang in there.

    08:27-08:27

    Right.

    08:28-08:41

Or there's a cat that just-- he's obviously wet, and there's some witty statement underneath about how much he loathes being wet because cats don't like being wet.

    08:41-08:43

So there's some kind of really cute statement underneath.

    08:44-08:48

Or there will be a picture of a kitten on fire.

    08:48-08:51

Let's be nice to the kittens kind of thing.

    08:51-09:01

And well, why are we talking about this?

    09:01-09:02

    Oh, I remember.

    09:04-09:11

I think one of the reasons Facebook is so popular is it gives a lot of people a platform to be like, this is who I am.

    09:12-09:13

    This is who I am.

    09:13-09:22

And you get to see, obviously characterizing some of these friends, but you get to see through these types of things, what people are all about.

    09:24-09:25

Like, oh yeah, that's my friend.

    09:25-09:27

He's always talking about working out.

    09:27-09:27

    That's my friend.

    09:28-09:30

    He's always talking about politics.

    09:30-09:33

That's my friend that's always talking about this.

    09:35-09:53

Well, today, Philippians, we're looking at a very familiar verse where the apostle Paul says in Philippians 121, "For to me, to live is blank." He doesn't say blank, I put the blank there.

    09:53-09:54

But what goes in the blank?

    09:55-09:58

"For to me, to live is," what?

    09:58-10:02

Well, for many people, it's multiple things.

    10:04-10:14

Many people would put different things in the blank, But the problem is what people typically put in the blank doesn't work with the rest of the verse.

    10:16-10:29

Because the rest of the verse says, "And to die is gain." So what is it that you're living for that someday when you die and, spoiler alert, you're going to die someday.

    10:31-10:39

If you were part of our small group, you totally would be on top of that because we're going through Ecclesiastes And Solomon, he just likes to remind people of that, right?

    10:39-10:44

Like all through Ecclesiastes, he's like, "Enjoy life from God, because by the way, you're going to die.

    10:45-11:01

And, you know, take life from the hand of God, because by the way, someday you're going to die." And what is it that we can live for that when we actually die, there's a sense of gain?

    11:03-11:08

Well, for example, if living is money, as some people would say, well, living is about making money.

    11:09-11:10

    It's about the American dream.

    11:10-11:11

    It's about earning.

    11:12-11:14

If living is money, then dying is what?

    11:15-11:16

    Dying is loss, isn't it?

    11:17-11:19

Because you're not taking it with you, right?

    11:20-11:22

    You've never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul, right?

    11:24-11:31

But if living is about my possessions, then dying is loss, because again, I'm not taking that stuff with me.

    11:31-11:44

If living is about popularity or influence, then dying is, well, it's not gain, because my last day of being popular is going to be my funeral.

    11:47-11:51

And thus, when my influence on the earth, what goes in the blank?

    11:53-11:55

    Well, look at Philippians 121.

    11:55-11:56

You tell me, what does Paul say?

    11:57-13:30

"For to me, to live is I'm going to give you another run at that. Are your Bibles open? That's really why we did that whole video. For me to live is what? Christ. And to die is? Gain. So to live is Christ. That's a biblical truth. Would we all agree with that biblical truth? To live is Christ. But as always, we didn't assemble today to see if we agree on theology. Because I want you to look at the first three words in verse 21. Paul says, "For to me to live is Christ." You see that? Paul didn't just say, "To live is Christ," as if, "You know and everybody goes to church. That's kind of what they say. That's kind of the motto at the church. To live is Christ, to live is Christ, to live is Christ. It's not some kind of a nonsensical, meaningless, empty statement. Paul was saying, "For to me, to live is Christ." Let me tell you what my life is about. For to me, to live as Christ. This has to be personally appropriated. The question is, can you say that in your heart?

    13:32-13:39

You can probably say, well, yeah, to live as Christ. Can you say to me to live as Christ?

    13:42-13:46

You're like, well, what's that mean? Well, first of all, let me tell you what it doesn't mean.

    13:48-13:50

He's not saying living for Christ.

    13:51-13:53

He's not saying living to be religious.

    13:55-13:58

He's not saying living is preaching Christ.

    14:02-14:05

What does it mean to live as Christ means?

    14:07-14:09

Life is summed up as Christ.

    14:11-14:17

If you're taking notes right, very fast, it means I'm filled with Christ, I am occupied with Christ.

    14:18-14:19

    I trust Christ.

    14:20-14:21

    I love Christ.

    14:21-14:22

    I hope in Christ.

    14:23-14:24

    I obey Christ.

    14:24-14:25

    I follow Christ.

    14:25-14:27

    I fellowship with Christ.

    14:28-14:29

    Christ is my inspiration.

    14:29-14:31

    Christ is my direction.

    14:31-14:33

    Christ is my meaning.

    14:33-14:34

    Christ is my purpose.

    14:35-14:40

I am consumed and dominated by Christ.

    14:41-14:43

That's what it means to live as Christ.

    14:46-14:55

You see, he didn't say for me to live, living is for Jesus, as if part of what I'm doing here is to...

    14:56-15:00

The sum total of what I'm doing here is for Jesus, is what he's saying.

    15:00-15:04

It's not living for Jesus. Life, it is Jesus.

    15:05-15:08

Because there's no life apart from Jesus.

    15:09-15:14

Therefore, any life that I have has to be Jesus.

    15:15-15:22

So the best way that I can say it is living is Christ.

    15:24-15:26

Paul says, that's what it is for me.

    15:29-15:30

    What about you?

    15:34-15:41

Jot this phrase down, no compartments, that's what it means to live for Christ, no compartments.

    15:42-15:43

What do I mean by no compartments?

    15:43-15:50

What it means is sometimes church, we come in here on a Sunday morning and we're like, yeah, to live is Christ, to live is Christ, to live is Christ.

    15:51-15:58

And then we walk out of there and we leave these little pockets of our lives that somehow we think Christ is exempt from those.

    16:00-16:01

    And that is wrong.

    16:04-16:05

    For example.

    16:08-16:08

    Marriage.

    16:11-16:13

What is God's purpose for your marriage?

    16:17-16:21

Like, well, purpose for marriage is I work and earn and she stays home and raises the kids.

    16:21-16:23

No, that's not God's purpose for marriage.

    16:23-16:25

You know what God's purpose for marriage is?

    16:27-16:28

You know what God's purpose for marriage is?

    16:28-16:35

God's purpose for marriage is that you would display the relationship between Jesus Christ and the church.

    16:35-16:36

    Did you know that?

    16:38-16:54

that marriage is supposed to be this on earth illustration of Jesus Christ who loves and lays down his life for the church and the church that honors and obeys and submits to Jesus Christ.

    16:56-16:57

Ephesians five is all about that.

    16:59-17:01

See, that's what you can say for me, my marriage is Christ.

    17:03-17:15

My marriage is Christ because we don't have a goal for our marriage outside of the goal that God has for our marriage, which is to represent Christ in the church, Ephesians 5.

    17:16-17:19

    Kids, your children.

    17:21-17:24

For to me, raising kids is Christ.

    17:25-17:26

    What does that mean?

    17:26-17:34

You view your children as, these are people that God has entrusted to you, to disciple.

    17:36-17:37

    Do you understand that?

    17:38-17:42

Now I know you've heard us say this before, but it is not the church's job to disciple your children.

    17:42-17:43

    It's not.

    17:44-17:46

God gave those children to you.

    17:46-17:56

It is our job as a church to come alongside you, parents, and assist you in helping you disciple your kids, but it is your job to disciple your own children.

    17:58-18:14

And part of living is Christ means you see your children from the living as Christ perspective to say, these aren't rugrats that I have to put up with until they're old enough to drive or leave the house to go to college.

    18:15-18:20

God has entrusted these lives to me to disciple them with the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

    18:22-18:24

That's what it means to live as Christ as far as kids go.

    18:24-18:25

    What about money?

    18:29-18:30

    What about money?

    18:31-18:34

Oh, Pastor Jeff, you should have said this before the offering.

    18:34-18:39

Do you see money from God's perspective?

    18:45-18:50

You know, to have the attitude, well, you know what, at church on Sunday, I give God his 10%.

    18:50-18:51

    Really?

    18:52-18:55

How much of the money in your pocket belongs to God?

    18:58-18:58

    100%.

    19:02-19:03

    Okay, 100%.

    19:03-19:26

you were born. You didn't bring anything. And how much are you taking with you when you leave? We already covered that. The Bible says, what is it, Psalm 24, 1, "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness therein." Everything on the earth belongs to God. And God in his grace has entrusted a certain amount to pass through your hands, but it's all his.

    19:28-19:59

is Christ means you see God's stuff as being God's stuff. Same with work. We covered this in Colossians, didn't we? Your work, your place of employment. "Well, Pastor Jeff, my boss is a bit of a jerk." You're to work as if Jesus Christ is your boss. With the same integrity, with the same diligence, that's how you are to work in your workplace. But are like in my workplace.

    20:00-20:02

I know what things are like in the word of God.

    20:02-20:06

And God says, you need to work as if Jesus Christ is your boss.

    20:07-20:09

That's what it means that living is Christ.

    20:12-20:17

Even in recreation, I know a lot of you guys are involved whether it's softball teams or whatever.

    20:18-20:21

    Even seeing recreation as Christ.

    20:25-20:27

    There again, we don't compartmentalize.

    20:29-20:37

You know, I've been to some Christian softball games back when I was on a softball team.

    20:39-20:52

There wasn't much Christian about it other than the pathetic little prayer that got thrown up at the beginning, but the language and the conduct and the attitudes, and what is that all about?

    20:57-21:02

I see my recreation as Christ.

    21:03-21:05

Christ at the center, no compartments.

    21:08-21:27

Is there any area of your life right now where you're saying, "You know what, Jesus really isn't the center of that area." If so, you're going to have a hard time saying, "For me to live is Christ." Well, let's look at the text here very quickly.

    21:29-21:31

What does it mean to live as Christ?

    21:31-21:35

Well, if you say to live as Christ, here are four other things that you say, okay?

    21:35-21:37

So you're going to give yourself a little test.

    21:37-21:42

Here are four other things that someone who says to live as Christ, they also say these things.

    21:42-22:04

And the first one is, verse 19, "I am confident in Christ's resources." "I am confident in Christ's resources." Remember so far in Philippians 1, we saw Paul thanking God for the church and the joy that he has, and the love that he has for the church, and how the gospel is going forth.

    22:04-22:34

It doesn't matter that I'm in prison, it doesn't matter that there are preachers with horrible motives, The gospel is going forth. He says, "I'm rejoicing in that." He says, "Yes, and I will rejoice," verse 19, "for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ, this will turn out for my deliverance." So to live as Christ means I am confident in Christ's resources.

    22:39-22:50

Notice Paul didn't say what I hear a lot of Christians saying, "It always makes me cringe." Well, I guess maybe we should pray about that.

    22:52-22:56

Or, I guess all we can do is pray. Have you ever heard somebody say that?

    22:56-22:57

All we can do is pray.

    22:58-23:08

Paul didn't approach God's resources with this sheepish, like it's some last-ditch, pardon the pun, Hail Mary effort.

    23:10-23:20

He says, "For I know that through..." Do you see the three resources here?

    23:20-23:22

These are three things that always work together.

    23:23-23:24

Three things that always work together.

    23:24-23:26

    The first one is prayer.

    23:29-23:32

The second one, he says, the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

    23:36-23:37

    Or the Holy Spirit.

    23:40-23:50

And the third one, notice he says, "This will turn out for my deliverance." Actually, that's a quote from Job chapter 13 and verse 16.

    23:53-24:22

See what Paul's doing here is he's actually pulling on his wealth of Old Testament knowledge and if you know if you've ever taken a walk through the Old Testament one of the Recurring themes that you see especially in the book of Psalms is God delivers the righteous Have you ever read that in the Psalms God delivers the righteous he delivers the righteous That's what Job said in Job 13 16 So Paul was actually quoting a promise from God from his word.

    24:23-24:25

So I want you to see here's three things that work together.

    24:25-24:31

Prayer, the Holy Spirit, and the Word of God.

    24:34-24:37

Those are the resources that God has given you.

    24:40-24:45

Now when he says, "This will turn out for my deliverance," what does that mean?

    24:47-24:57

Does that mean I know that I'm going to get out of jail, or these trials that I'm going through right now are going to be over, or was he talking about death?

    25:00-25:02

Well, the answer really is all of the above.

    25:03-25:13

Because what he's saying is, "I know that these problems that I'm going through right now are temporary." That's what he's saying.

    25:13-25:15

"I know that this is temporary.

    25:15-25:30

So whether I get out of jail and I'm on my merry way, and we'll see this attitude come out here in a second, so whether I'm out of jail and I'm on my merry way preaching the gospel or I die, this is only temporary.

    25:30-25:38

So listen, I know that there are some people here right now that are going through some major league things.

    25:40-25:53

I know there are some people right now who are going through some relational hurt, financial hurt. Listen, that's temporary. OK, that is temporary.

    25:55-25:59

We talked about this about a month ago, you are not taking your trials to heaven.

    26:00-26:06

OK, God has promised resources in the meantime, and here they are.

    26:07-26:10

The question is, how much are you using the resources that God has given you?

    26:11-26:13

    The first one is prayer.

    26:15-26:16

Do you realize what a resource that is?

    26:17-26:18

    God's like, here's a gift.

    26:19-26:21

You can talk to me any time you want.

    26:24-26:25

    Isn't that awesome?

    26:26-26:27

    Isn't that awesome?

    26:29-26:29

    I'm going to try again.

    26:30-26:31

    Isn't that awesome?

    26:33-26:41

That you can, wherever you are, no matter what you're doing, you can stop, write that in there, and talk to the God of the universe.

    26:41-26:42

    Isn't that awesome?

    26:45-26:52

You know, this past Thursday, we went up to Geneva and spoke at the upper room service, and that was one of the things that just grabbed me.

    26:54-26:55

    Those people love to pray.

    26:56-27:00

And those people pray as if they believe that God is listening.

    27:01-27:02

    That's awesome.

    27:04-27:09

But you know, shame on us for when we don't take advantage of that resource.

    27:10-27:15

No matter where you are or what you're doing, God has given you this resource.

    27:16-27:16

    Like, hey, call me.

    27:16-27:19

You don't need to make sure you have cell reception.

    27:20-27:22

You don't need to hit a high, you know, wifi hotspot.

    27:23-27:24

You don't need to make an appointment.

    27:25-27:31

Anytime, anywhere, you can cry out to the God of the universe and he will hear you and answer you.

    27:32-27:33

    That's awesome.

    27:36-27:39

    God's Holy Spirit, another resource.

    27:39-27:41

Is there a better resource than that?

    27:42-27:43

    God's like, here's a resource.

    27:44-27:45

I'll just come and live inside you.

    27:46-27:50

So it's not as if I'm way up there beyond the cosmos somewhere.

    27:51-27:51

    God, are you there?

    27:52-27:53

    God says, here's a resource.

    27:54-27:55

    I will indwell you.

    27:57-27:59

I will set up residency in your heart.

    28:04-28:06

    You yield to me.

    28:07-28:08

    I'll take control.

    28:09-28:15

That's why Paul says, "Walk by the Spirit so you don't fulfill the lust of the flesh." Walk by the Spirit. He's dwelling in you.

    28:16-28:19

Then the third resource is God's Word.

    28:20-28:20

    God's Word.

    28:22-28:26

God gave us a book so that we don't have to guess, we don't have to suppose.

    28:27-28:33

It's crystal clear from God's Book who He is and what He's about, and who His Son is and what He's accomplished.

    28:35-28:39

But even beyond that, as Paul's talking about here, his promises for the future.

    28:39-29:01

Paul says, "I know. I know that through prayers and through the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit, and I know based on the promises of God, everything's going to be okay." So whatever you're going through, I want you to understand that you already have the resources to get through.

    29:01-29:02

    Okay?

    29:03-29:03

    Understand that.

    29:05-29:10

A lot of times, even in the Christian church, it's, "Well, if you want the resources to get through your trial, you have to go...

    29:10-29:15

We're having this conference here for, you know, $55, that includes your box lunch.

    29:15-29:24

Well, you have the greatest resources that you can have to get through whatever you're going through right now." That's prayer, God's Spirit, and God's Word.

    29:25-29:29

The question really is, how much are you using the resources that God gave you?

    29:29-29:30

    That's the question.

    29:32-29:34

Have you put your confidence in money?

    29:34-29:36

If I just make more money, I can buy my way out.

    29:37-29:43

Or friends, you know, if I just make the right friends or if I trust these friends that have some influence or pull or whatever, they can help me out.

    29:45-29:48

Have you placed your confidence in your intelligence?

    29:50-29:53

If I just think harder, I can figure a way out of this mess.

    29:56-30:03

I heard a preacher say one time that Jesus is all you need, but you'll never know it until he's all you got.

    30:05-30:11

And then when he's all you got, you realize he's all that you need.

    30:13-30:16

So to live as Christ means I'm confident in Christ's resources.

    30:17-30:18

That's what it means to live as Christ.

    30:19-30:19

    What else does it mean?

    30:20-30:20

    Well, look at verse 20.

    30:22-30:44

"I live in one expectation, no shame in Christ." Paul says, "As it is my eager expectation and hope." that I will not be at all ashamed, but that with full courage now as always, Christ will be honored in my body, whether by life or by death.

    30:45-30:48

I live in one expectation, no shame in Christ.

    30:54-31:02

No matter where you've been in life or where you're heading, what age you are, Everybody in this room has expectations, right?

    31:03-31:11

Do you have expectations about your kids, about your jobs, about your health?

    31:11-31:12

    Do you have expectations?

    31:13-31:14

    All right, spoiler alert.

    31:17-31:18

    You're going to be disappointed.

    31:20-31:28

You're like, "Well, thank you for that, Debbie Downer." This is reality check.

    31:29-31:32

There are times in life that things don't work out the way you planned.

    31:34-31:42

And I don't think there's anyone in this room naive enough to think that everything is candy land until you get to heaven.

    31:44-31:56

You're going to have expectations and you're going to be disappointed, which is why Paul says here in verse 20 that he only has one expectation.

    31:58-32:08

Because here's one thing that you will never be disappointed in, and that's this, you will never be ashamed in your life in Jesus Christ.

    32:10-32:15

You will never be ashamed of your life in Christ.

    32:18-32:20

Now, I've done a lot of things that I'm ashamed of.

    32:23-32:26

Part of it you could say is growing up in the 80s and the 90s.

    32:27-32:32

You know, do you see those pictures of yourself from a different era?

    32:32-32:34

    That you're like, I can't believe I wore that.

    32:34-32:35

    You ever seen those pictures?

    32:36-32:37

    Like burn those pictures.

    32:38-32:46

Or I'm so embarrassed that I used to be into that or I used to act like that or I used to dress like that or I used to have my hair like that.

    32:46-32:48

    I'm so embarrassed about that.

    32:48-32:52

I'm so ashamed that I thought once upon a time That was so cool to do this.

    32:55-32:57

See, that's exactly what Paul's saying here.

    32:57-32:58

You know what my expectation is?

    32:58-33:08

I know that I'm never, ever, ever going to look back and say, Jesus disappointed me.

    33:11-33:17

He says, I'm never going to look back and say, you know what, there was a period in my life that I think I just prayed too much.

    33:18-33:24

I think I just spent too much time praying when I should have been spending more time doing something else.

    33:24-33:25

    There's no shame.

    33:27-33:31

Or, you know, I just worked a little too hard for Jesus.

    33:32-33:32

    You know?

    33:33-33:37

You know, I got involved with the church and I was really working hard and involved.

    33:37-33:42

And looking back now, I'm not really sure that was worth it.

    33:45-33:46

I gave too much to that church.

    33:47-33:47

    You know what?

    33:48-33:59

I gave so much to that church that I didn't have enough to take care of my own family, and I didn't have enough to take care of my own needs, and you're never going to say that.

    34:01-34:02

Here's something else you'll never say.

    34:03-34:04

You know, I just worship too much.

    34:05-34:07

Do you think anybody in heaven's saying that?

    34:08-34:17

Do you think anybody in heaven, looking at the full splendor of God, is saying, you know what, while I was on the earth, I just got a little bit too excited about you, and I just worshiped a little too much.

    34:17-34:19

I'm a little embarrassed about that.

    34:19-34:44

Paul says, "I will not be at all ashamed, "but that with full courage, now as always, "Christ will be honored in my body, "whether by life or by death." He said, "That's the only thing I got my eyes on, "is Christ honored in me, is Christ honored in me, "because as long as living is Christ, "I'm never going to be put to shame.

    34:46-34:48

I'm never going to be embarrassed of Christ.

    34:49-34:50

He's never going to let me down.

    34:53-34:56

So to live as Christ means I'm confident in Christ's resources.

    34:56-35:01

To live in Christ means I live in one expectation that there's no shame in Christ.

    35:03-35:06

    Number three, here's another expectation.

    35:06-35:07

    Death is a win.

    35:10-35:32

Verse 21, he says, "For me to live as Christ "and to die is gain." For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain." And then he says, look at verses 22 and 23, "If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me.

    35:33-35:34

Yet which I shall choose, I cannot tell.

    35:34-35:36

    I'm hard-pressed between the two.

    35:36-35:46

My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better." Death is a win.

    35:46-35:53

He says, "Living is to serve and dying is a gain." You know how the world treats death?

    35:54-35:57

That living is for me and death is the end.

    35:59-36:00

    Life is about me.

    36:00-36:02

I only get one shot at this.

    36:02-36:05

And you gotta make yourself happy.

    36:05-36:12

You gotta make sure that you're living in such a way because you only have one life and make it for you because when you're dead, it's over.

    36:14-36:28

Paul's like, "No, living is Christ. Dying is actually gain." I want you to underline in your Bible this phrase in verse 23.

    36:28-36:38

He says, "My desire is to depart and," underline this, "be with Christ." Why do I want you to underline that?

    36:40-36:57

Because a lot of times people ask me, "What happens when you die?" And the reason I get asked this question a lot, there's a lot of false teaching out there that when you die, you go to this other place.

    36:58-37:07

It's sort of like a holding place that has these fires that burn off the remainder of sin still on your account.

    37:10-37:24

So the belief is you die, you go to this place, and people on earth pray for you so that the fiery finds you and gets you ready for heaven so that you're there for however many countless years until you're purified enough for heaven.

    37:25-37:26

    That is blasphemy.

    37:28-37:35

That is an insult to the gospel of Jesus Christ who, when he died on the cross, what did Jesus say?

    37:36-37:37

    It is finished.

    37:39-37:47

So the concept of, well, Jesus died for my sin, but there's still some sin that needs paid for.

    37:47-37:51

So what, Jesus' crucifixion was just a little bit lame?

    37:51-37:52

    Is that what we're saying?

    37:53-37:54

That Jesus didn't fully do the job?

    37:55-37:56

    Is that what we're saying?

    37:59-38:25

to Jesus, the full work of salvation was done at the cross. So to then say, "Well, I think that I still have some sin on my account," that's blasphemy. So people say, "Well, where does the Bible say that when we die we immediately go into the Lord's presence?" Here's one place, okay? Here's one place. I can show you some others, but Here's one, we're here.

    38:26-38:28

But notice Paul says, "What should I choose?

    38:28-38:34

"If I live, it's to serve Christ, "and if I die, it's to go burn some sin off.

    38:35-38:41

"If I die, it's to be with Jesus Christ." So do you see that?

    38:41-38:43

    There is no intermediary place.

    38:43-38:45

    There's no temporary place.

    38:46-38:50

It's from earth, death, to where?

    38:51-38:52

    Christ's presence.

    38:53-38:53

    Do you catch that?

    38:55-38:57

    Christ's presence immediately.

    38:59-39:01

You don't pass go and you don't collect $200.

    39:02-39:04

    Right to Christ's presence.

    39:07-39:10

So Paul here is saying, you know, heads I win, tails I win.

    39:11-39:12

    I can't lose.

    39:14-39:15

    There's no sting of death.

    39:16-39:18

    Paul's like, I just can't lose here.

    39:21-39:25

And this all boils down to believing what God's word says about heaven.

    39:27-39:47

That's a whole nother sermon, but I would like to remind you today that in heaven, you are done with pain, you are done with hurt, you're done with sorrow, with disappointment, with sickness, with anything on the earth that makes earth a pain sometimes to dwell in.

    39:48-39:51

Those things aren't in heaven, But that's not the sales pitch.

    39:53-39:54

    Here's the sales pitch.

    39:54-39:56

Do you know what makes heaven so awesome?

    39:57-39:58

    Do you know?

    39:59-40:00

    Because that's where God is.

    40:02-40:03

    That's where God is.

    40:03-40:05

And that's what Paul is focused on here.

    40:06-40:09

And that's why he uses the phrase far better.

    40:12-40:16

So when living is Christ, something else you say is, you know what?

    40:16-40:17

    Death is a wind.

    40:17-40:19

    We're not scared of death.

    40:23-40:30

Eternity in the presence of my Savior forever done with sin and pain, and we're scared of that?

    40:32-40:33

    Death is a win.

    40:34-40:38

And then finally, life is about serving others.

    40:39-40:41

Look at verses 24 through 26.

    40:42-40:43

    Life is about serving others.

    40:44-40:53

But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

    40:55-41:10

Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus because of my coming to you again." Life is about serving others.

    41:12-41:18

Notice he said dying was far better for him, but remaining is, he says, more necessary.

    41:21-41:36

Paul isn't focused on what he prefers. He's focused on others' needs. If you had five minutes to choose, stay or go, which would you pick? What would you do? You had five minutes.

    41:37-41:42

that God was like, "Okay, Bob Arnold, five minutes.

    41:42-41:44

You either decide you're staying or you're going to heaven.

    41:45-41:45

    What would you pick?

    41:47-41:49

You know, Carrie Newman, five minutes, you have to pick.

    41:49-41:50

Are you staying or are you going?

    41:50-41:58

What would you pick?" Well, some people would want to stay for earthly reasons.

    41:59-42:03

I imagine some people would say, "Well, I'd like to stay because I'd like to see my kids grow up and graduate.

    42:03-42:07

And I would like to, you know, I kind of see how the election turns out next month.

    42:07-42:11

And, you know, JC Penney's is having a sale in December.

    42:11-42:14

And I kind of like, like, really?

    42:17-42:26

Well, Paul said, going is better, but I know that right now it's necessary that I stay.

    42:26-42:26

    Why?

    42:26-42:28

He was thinking about other people.

    42:29-42:37

So it boils down to this being alive, in Paul's mind was equal to fruitful labor for Christ.

    42:37-42:38

    Do you see that?

    42:39-42:44

He's like, "Living is one thing, and it's serving Christ." That's what living is.

    42:44-42:46

    Why? Because living is Christ.

    42:47-43:11

And if Christ is alive, and Christ is alive in me, and Christ wants to do something through me, That must mean that since I'm still on the earth, Christ is going to accomplish his purposes through me in ministry.

    43:14-43:17

    Living is Christ.

    43:19-43:20

    How about for you?

    43:22-43:25

For to me, to live is Christ.

    43:28-43:30

As I close, I wanna talk about baptism for just a minute.

    43:34-43:41

You know, for us to say to live is Christ, you know, Jesus gave us a way to publicly declare that.

    43:44-43:46

    And that's through baptism.

    43:47-44:01

He gave us a way to publicly declare that we are not ashamed, that we are not part-time, and that we are not experimenting.

    44:03-44:12

Say, "Well, I'm gonna try Jesus for a while "and see how he does." No, we are sold out, we have been made alive, and our life is Christ.

    44:13-44:14

And that's the picture of baptism.

    44:14-44:16

That's why he gave us this picture.

    44:17-44:22

In baptism, when you go under the water, see that water represents a tomb.

    44:23-44:30

When you go under the water, what you're saying is, "I'm dead." Jeff Miller is dead.

    44:33-44:48

And then when you're brought up out of the water, you're identifying with the resurrection of Christ to say, "I have been raised in the newness of life." The Jeff is dead, now Christ lives in me and through me.

    44:48-44:50

My life now is all about Jesus Christ.

    44:51-44:52

    That's the picture of baptism.

    44:56-45:00

I'm identifying with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    45:01-45:05

And biblically, there is no such thing as an unbaptized Christian.

    45:07-45:11

So if you have not been baptized, this is the time.

    45:12-45:15

You need to come and talk to me about it today, after the service.

    45:16-45:19

    November 20th at 7 o'clock at Northway, that's a Tuesday.

    45:20-45:22

We're going to be having a night of incredible worship.

    45:22-45:38

And it's your opportunity, if you've not taken that step, it's your opportunity to publicly declare, profess your faith in Jesus Christ, to say, "You know, to me, to live is Christ."

    The unstoppable message.

    00:05-00:09

You know, getting discouraged has been really easy for me lately.

    00:12-00:17

Because it's October, and guess which baseball team is not playing?

    00:19-00:22

    I seriously, I was drinking the Kool-Aid.

    00:22-00:23

I thought this was going to be the year.

    00:25-00:30

And anybody else, like, you know, June, July, You're like, this is our year.

    00:30-00:32

We're going to get into the playoffs.

    00:32-00:33

    What happened?

    00:34-00:35

    Discouraging.

    00:36-00:40

And then I thought, well, at least the Steelers season is starting.

    00:42-00:45

At least Thursday night I had things done.

    00:45-00:46

So I'm like, you know what?

    00:46-00:47

    The evening's cleared.

    00:47-00:50

I can watch the Steelers beat the weakest team in the league.

    00:53-00:54

How is that working for you?

    00:55-01:00

And then I thought, well, you know what happens, Corinne, at the beginning of October, right?

    01:01-01:04

The penguin season, at least the penguins.

    01:06-01:08

    And hoping against hope.

    01:08-01:12

I actually was flipping through the channels, and I saw it said-- did you see that too?

    01:12-01:14

    It says Islanders at Penguins.

    01:14-01:18

I'm like, maybe something happened that I completely missed.

    01:18-01:23

And I turned it on, and it was that replay of last year, like Crosby's return.

    01:23-01:24

    I was like, OK.

    01:25-01:26

    Now I'm really discouraged.

    01:27-01:29

    Well, I'm going after joy.

    01:29-01:30

    Who's with me?

    01:31-01:33

    I'm going after joy, right?

    01:34-01:46

And joy is found not in things black and gold, but joy is found in God and in the things of God.

    01:48-01:54

And last week when we started Philippians, we saw that the apostle Paul said, "I love the church." He said, "I love the church.

    01:55-01:56

"The church is where God works.

    01:56-01:58

The church is where I am comforted.

    01:58-02:04

The church is where we grow in the Lord, grow in the knowledge of the Lord.

    02:06-02:09

Remember verse five, he says, I'm praying for you joyfully.

    02:10-02:15

In verse five, it says, "Because of your partnership in the gospel." That was the very first thing, Paul, right out of the gate.

    02:16-02:17

    It was about the gospel.

    02:17-02:21

And I want you to see in verse 12, what we're picking up this week.

    02:22-02:58

Last phrase in verse 12, he's talking about advancing the gospel. And almost every verse today we're going to look at, Paul is talking about the gospel. I think there's only one verse in this section where he doesn't mention the gospel, preaching Christ, proclaiming Christ. The gospel of Jesus Christ was the Apostle Paul's passion. And I think that's missing in the church today. I went to Bible college in Circleville, Ohio.

    02:58-03:07

Has anybody ever heard of Circleville? Some of you have. What's Circleville famous for? Besides, that's where Pastor Jeff went to college. Yeah, real famous.

    03:08-03:23

What was it? Yes, the Pumpkin Show! Is it this week? Oh my goodness. Well, for those For those of you not in the know, every year, Cherkovo has this pumpkin show, and it's all anybody talks about out there.

    03:24-03:31

And they basically, they close down the entire city, literally, they rope off the city.

    03:32-03:33

And have you been there, Tom?

    03:36-03:39

Okay, I hope nothing I say is going to offend you, but.

    03:42-03:45

    They have pumpkin everything.

    03:46-03:52

Pumpkin cookies, the world's largest pumpkin pie, which was a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be, to be honest with you.

    03:54-04:04

Pumpkin beer, pumpkin sandwiches, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin-- name it.

    04:04-04:06

They had-- that's all everybody talked about.

    04:09-04:10

    I don't like pumpkin.

    04:12-04:13

    OK, I just don't.

    04:13-04:16

And the only thing worse than pumpkin is pumpkin spice.

    04:17-04:18

    Who likes that stuff?

    04:25-04:31

Well, needless to say, I was disappointed in the pumpkin fest and I was one of the few.

    04:32-04:33

    I just didn't get it.

    04:34-04:36

And I think that's what's happening in churches.

    04:38-04:44

That you have some people that are very passionate about the gospel, but I think by and large, Most people come in and they're, "I don't get it.

    04:45-04:46

    What's everybody so excited about?

    04:47-04:55

I just don't see why everybody's so excited." Well, Paul was excited about it because the gospel is the power of God.

    04:56-05:04

Do you know, do you know, there's only one other thing that's called the power of God.

    05:04-05:06

    That's Jesus Christ.

    05:08-05:15

Other than that, the only thing in the Bible that is specifically referred to as the power of God is the gospel.

    05:16-05:18

And Paul was passionate about it.

    05:19-05:22

It's the message of salvation in Jesus Christ.

    05:27-05:59

So let me ask you, church, if we are the channel that God is using to bring dead people alive, If we are the channel that God is speaking through to reach the lost, to minister to the hurt, with a message that is incomparable, with a message that, as we'll see today, is unstoppable, let me ask you, church, why do we struggle with discouragement?

    06:03-06:07

When I was first called into ministry, I was so wide-eyed.

    06:08-06:10

I thought, this is gonna be easy.

    06:12-06:13

Because like, well, you know what?

    06:13-06:17

When I went to Bible college, I'm like, well, I only need to buy one textbook, right?

    06:18-06:20

Like a lot of college students have to buy all these books.

    06:20-06:21

    I only need one.

    06:21-06:23

I found out that wasn't true.

    06:23-06:24

    Rip off.

    06:25-06:27

Like, you need other books besides the Bible?

    06:31-06:34

But there's a lot of discouragement, even in ministry.

    06:39-06:45

Satan is unable to stop the power of God's Word. Do you believe that? I do.

    06:47-06:51

You know, God says that His Word always accomplishes the purposes for which He sends it out.

    06:52-06:58

So when the Gospel is proclaimed, understand that Satan cannot stop the power of the Gospel. He can't do it.

    06:58-07:01

Nothing can stop the power of the gospel.

    07:02-07:03

    So what does Satan do?

    07:07-07:12

    Satan discourages God's people.

    07:15-07:28

Because if we're less likely to speak up, if we shy away or if we're discouraged to the point of abandoning the ministry that God's called us to, then the gospel's not going out at all.

    07:34-07:37

There's a lot of discouragement when you're involved in ministry.

    07:40-07:57

And I don't just mean pastoral ministry, like, "Oh, Jeff's going to talk about, like, preacher talk for the next half hour, so time to tune out." No, whether you're involved in children's ministry, or the hospitality ministry, or The worship ministry, there's discouragement in ministry.

    08:03-08:37

One time during a especially discouraging period, I asked the pastor of the church I served previously, I said, "Have you ever felt like just "throwing it all in, like done, quit?" And he smiled and he said, "Once a day, every day, "there's discouragement involved." And what we're going to see when we get into the text here, this is just like in our faces.

    08:37-08:41

I know some of you may be going through discouragement right now.

    08:41-08:41

    Like, you know what?

    08:42-08:49

Once upon a time, I was excited about serving the Lord and I was excited about this church plant.

    08:49-08:51

    And you know what?

    08:51-08:54

Now we're a year and some change down the road.

    08:56-08:57

    Getting a little discouraged.

    08:58-08:59

    I'm getting a little discouraged.

    09:00-09:03

Well, if you are, there are two categories.

    09:06-09:09

Two broad categories that are the source of your discouragement.

    09:09-09:10

They're right here in the text.

    09:11-09:14

Paul's going to address them, but here's the thing.

    09:15-09:26

What we're going to see is Paul saying, "Here's how you can face the things that discourage you in your ministry and still have joy, because nothing stops God's purposes.

    09:29-09:36

So number one on your outline, I will not be discouraged by, write down the word circumstances.

    09:41-09:42

    Why?

    09:42-09:44

Well, let's look at verses 12 through 14.

    09:44-09:54

Paul says, "I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel.

    09:57-09:58

    What happened to Paul?

    09:58-10:12

Well, he says here, "So that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ." Okay, so he's talking about his imprisonment.

    10:15-10:34

But most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear." So first of all, if we are going through a period of discouragement right now, the one main source that can be from is just your circumstances.

    10:35-10:39

I'm in a place right now in my life, things aren't really going optimal.

    10:40-10:45

I'm not really enjoying what's happening in my life right now.

    10:48-10:50

Well, when Paul wrote this, he was in prison.

    10:51-10:52

    Jot this reference down.

    10:52-10:54

We're not going to turn and read it, but I want you to.

    10:54-11:02

Acts chapter 28, verses 16 through 20, because immediately when you hear, well, Paul's in prison, what do you think of?

    11:03-11:04

    What do you think of?

    11:04-11:05

You think of a dungeon, right?

    11:06-11:12

Where he's chained, arms above his head, and there's like a rat sitting there and like a skull.

    11:12-11:13

    That's what you think of.

    11:13-11:21

But actually with this imprisonment, Paul is not in a common prison with criminals.

    11:24-11:27

Actually during this imprisonment, there was no real legal issue Paul was facing.

    11:27-11:34

He was in prison more for his safety than for committing some sort of a crime.

    11:34-11:46

When you read Acts chapter 28, verses 16 through 20, It talks about this, but Paul was actually staying by himself in a house, but he was chained to a guard.

    11:50-12:00

Now, understand that Paul would have been chained to a guard 24 hours a day, and the guards came in six-hour shifts.

    12:01-12:03

So quick math, how many guards is that a day?

    12:06-12:07

How many, okay, Lorming says four.

    12:08-12:10

    Okay, four, okay, good.

    12:10-12:15

All right, I'm not that good at math, so sometimes I just have to call on you to help me out here.

    12:16-12:28

24 hours a day, six hour shifts, that means Paul had four guards a day that would come in and chain themselves to him for the next six hour shift.

    12:29-12:34

And I gotta be honest with you, that sounds like that could really get discouraging in ministry, don't you think?

    12:35-12:36

    Couldn't you hear it?

    12:39-12:44

You know, Paul, you had this great ministry and you were planting all these churches and you were doing amazing things for God.

    12:45-12:45

    Now look at you.

    12:48-12:49

    You can't do anything.

    12:53-12:57

You can't do anything because you're chained to a guard, Paul.

    12:59-13:02

that your ministry has become completely shut down.

    13:06-13:09

Paul, you should be discouraged by your circumstances, don't you think?

    13:09-13:11

    Shouldn't Paul be discouraged?

    13:11-13:13

He's out preaching and people are coming to Christ.

    13:14-13:16

Now Paul is chained to a guard.

    13:18-13:19

    That should be discouraging.

    13:22-13:24

But you see, you gotta flip the perspective there.

    13:25-13:31

Because if you would have gone to Paul and said that, "Paul, Paul, you're chained to a guard." You know what he would have said?

    13:33-13:45

He would have said, "No, the guard's chained to me." "But Paul, your ministry is stifled." Paul's like, "No, ministry is fantastic right now." Because do you know why?

    13:47-13:52

I get to preach to this guy for six hours a day, and he's not going anywhere.

    13:54-13:56

How much can you communicate in six hours?

    13:56-14:00

You're like, "Pastor Jeff, you do a fine job every Sunday communicating for six hours.

    14:03-14:04

    That was a joke, visitors.

    14:04-14:06

We don't really stay here six hours.

    14:09-14:25

Six hours, Paul's like, yeah, I get this guy for six hours and I'm telling him all about Jesus Christ and how he died on the cross, how he rose from the dead, how the Son of God came to die for my sins, and he wants to give this gift of salvation to you.

    14:25-14:34

And shift change, and Paul's like, "It's great, "because then they bring me somebody else, "and he gets six hours.

    14:35-14:55

"Hey, let me tell you about Jesus Christ "and the way that he died on the cross "and he rose from the dead." Shift change, "Hey, let me tell you about Jesus Christ." Paul's like, "My ministry's not stifled, it's fantastic." I used to do prison ministry, and people ask me, "Well, what do you think about prison ministry?" And I told people I love it.

    14:56-14:59

I used to go in and preach for two hours and I've never had anybody get up and leave.

    15:00-15:01

    It's fantastic.

    15:04-15:09

My ministry is not hindered, it's not postponed, it's not suspended, it goes where I am.

    15:09-15:11

So jot these three sub points down.

    15:13-15:24

If you're discouraged by your circumstances, if you're in a place right now where you're like, yeah, I'm just really, I don't really know if God can use me right now because I'm in a bad place in my life.

    15:25-15:26

    Write these three things down.

    15:26-15:31

First of all, letter A, God uses unlikely situations to advance the gospel.

    15:32-15:36

God uses unlikely situations to advance the gospel.

    15:36-15:38

    Look again at verse 12.

    15:40-15:42

The church in Philippi was like, "How's Paul doing?

    15:42-15:43

    "How's Paul doing?

    15:43-15:44

    "It must be rough.

    15:44-15:45

    "It must be really hard.

    15:46-15:47

    "He's chained to a guard.

    15:47-15:48

    "It must be hard.

    15:48-17:33

"Paul, how are you doing?" "Well, I'll tell you how I'm doing." He goes, "I want you to know." brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel." He knew what they were thinking. "Your ministry shut down." "No, no, no, no, no, no. I want you to know something. The gospel is going on better than ever, because every effort to stop the gospel of Jesus Christ actually furthers it. Write that down, take notes, watch for it, and do a little research on it. Every effort to stop the gospel only advances it every time. You're like, "Well, can you give me an example?" I'll give you just two. How many of you have ever heard of John Bunyan. Not the guy with the big blue ox. That's John's brother Paul. This is John Bunyan. He wrote what? Pilgrim's Progress, right? Did you know that his preaching was so powerful that they actually put him in Bedford jail to silence him. But he preached at the top of his lungs from inside the jail and people actually gathered around the outside of the jail just to listen to him preach. Well you can imagine how that angered the authorities. So they took him down to a part of the jail where no one from the outside could hear him no no matter how loudly he spoke.

    17:35-17:38

So because he was sort of isolated, do you know what he did with his time?

    17:39-17:46

He wrote Pilgrim's Progress, which has ministered to people for generations and generations and generations.

    17:47-17:50

The effort to stop the gospel only advanced the gospel.

    17:52-17:53

    I love this one.

    17:53-18:28

French philosopher Voltaire. He was a skeptic who destroyed the faith of many people. He said within 100 years of his death, the Bible would disappear from the face of the earth. Voltaire died in 1728, and 50 years after his death, the Geneva a Bible Society, moved into his former house, and used his printing presses to print thousands of Bibles.

    18:33-18:37

Every effort to stop the Gospel actually furthers it.

    18:39-18:43

So understand this, first of all, God uses unlikely situations to advance the Gospel.

    18:45-18:49

Secondly, letter B, God uses my struggles to reach the lost.

    18:49-18:51

Look at verse 13 again with me.

    18:52-19:00

He said, "It's become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest of my imprisonment is for Christ.

    19:01-19:12

God uses my struggles to reach the lost as in people I would not have met otherwise." He talks about the imperial guard.

    19:12-19:14

That was the elite of the elite.

    19:18-19:20

Not only them, but the word was spreading.

    19:21-19:28

Notice, he says, "And to all the rest." Again, imagine drawing that assignment.

    19:28-19:30

Imagine if you were one of the Imperial Guard.

    19:32-19:34

You know exactly how that went down.

    19:36-19:41

Maybe after the first few shifts of being with Paul, you got talking to the other guards.

    19:41-20:09

You get talking to your buddies, and you're like, "Yeah, I drew the assignment with the religious nut. Well, what was that like? Oh my gosh, he just he talks about Jesus this and Jesus that and Jesus this and you know. But you see, after a while they didn't just hear Paul's preaching. They would have been seeing Paul's character.

    20:13-22:59

They would have noted hypocrisy. They would have seen if the Apostle Paul was talking about victory and the resurrection of Jesus Christ one day and then complaining and cursing God the next day. They would have seen that. But they didn't. And that's how it progressed. Paul, what would you like to talk about today, the same thing I talked about last time. And notice if you flip over a page to Philippians 4 verse 22, as Paul's closing up, I love as he says, "All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar's household." How did those people come to Christ? Because what happened to Paul really served to advance the gospel. You know, truth and time go hand in hand, and a steady testimony gets people's attention. There are some people right now who may be in a situation that you didn't choose and you certainly don't prefer, but I want to ask you, who's your imperial garden? Who are the people that God has chained you to so that he may reach them with the gospel? I've shared with you before, you know, when our children were diagnosed with autism, I was immersed into a whole subculture of society that I never knew existed. You start showing up at these speech therapy places and these support group places and you know these you know doctors offices where they're helping treat these kids and you just look around you're like wow there's a whole group of people that are going through the same struggles that we are. These are people that we wouldn't have met otherwise. Did you know that? Before Owen was born, how much time do you think we spent in the office of speech evaluators. Take a guess, how much time? Okay, Sammy, what are you doing today? Why don't we go hang out at the office where they evaluate autistic kids? Yeah, that sounds like fun. So there's a sense in which we sort of feel like, do you get this? We sort of feel like we've been chained to this, sort of God put us in a situation where we're gonna be rubbing shoulders with these people, because we are these people. We wouldn't have met these people otherwise.

    23:03-23:08

That's one of the glorious things about the gospel, among a trillion other things.

    23:09-23:26

But God will take your struggles, the hurts that you're going through, the obstacles that you think are obstacles that God says, "That's not an obstacle, So that's an opportunity, because using this I'm going to put you in the path of people that I love and that I want to hear the gospel.

    23:29-23:32

Paul got that, and he was chained to a guard.

    23:36-23:37

Can you and I get that?

    23:40-23:43

And if we get it, the question is what kind of testimony are we giving?

    23:44-23:45

    What kind of a testimony?

    23:48-24:02

You know, if I show up at this speech evaluator's office and I'm sitting with these other families and I'm just like, "Oh, autism has been so rough "and I hate my life and it's been miserable "and everything seems hopeless.

    24:02-24:03

"And by the way, I'm a Christian.

    24:03-24:06

"Why don't you come to my church sometime?" Save me a seat.

    24:07-24:08

    That sounds fantastic.

    24:11-24:13

    Steady testimony, steady testimony.

    24:14-24:15

    God's using it.

    24:15-24:18

And if you get that, you allow that.

    24:22-24:23

Then verse 14, jot this down.

    24:24-24:26

God uses the faithful to inspire his people.

    24:27-24:44

So not only to reach the lost, but he says, "And most of the brothers, "having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, "are much more bold to speak the word without fear." So how did it affect the church?

    24:44-24:45

How did it affect other Christians?

    24:46-24:50

Three words here, confident, bold, without fear.

    24:53-24:56

So let me ask you, why does persecution cause boldness?

    24:59-25:02

    Why does persecution cause boldness?

    25:02-25:02

    Why is that?

    25:04-25:30

I would think if I was just sort of reasoning this out in my natural mind, that when I see somebody preaching the gospel and they're in prison for it or they're being mistreated for it, I would think that I am less likely to preach the gospel because I don't want to be mistreated for it. But the truth is it doesn't work that way.

    25:32-26:02

Persecution always results in boldness because people see that this stuff is real. We're not playing games here. You know that? We're not playing games. This is lay it all down for the message of eternity. Jesus Christ is alive. His death accomplished what he said it would accomplish. His resurrection accomplished what he said it would accomplish. Heaven is real. It's a really place and real people are really going there when they receive Christ as their Lord and Savior.

    26:03-26:12

This is real stuff. And persecution has a way of giving that a shot of adrenaline.

    26:12-26:37

This is real. There's a real spiritual war going on. They would have seen Paul's effectiveness, and they also would have seen God's protection. And I was trying I'm trying to think of a way to, how is it that you can see somebody like Paul going through what he's going through and be even more fired up?

    26:37-26:41

And the best thing I could come up with is Rocky Balboa.

    26:42-26:45

I don't mean the movie with that title, I mean the character.

    26:47-26:54

But why is it that after you watch Rocky, you feel like you could whoop anyone?

    26:55-26:56

Is it just me or anybody else?

    26:57-27:01

Seriously, when you watch Rocky, you feel like, bring it on.

    27:03-27:04

I could whoop anybody right now.

    27:06-27:19

The thing that I didn't understand seeing Rocky as a kid and then actually watching real boxing growing up, the thing I didn't understand is in real boxing, they don't stand there and get punched five times in a row and then punch the other guy five times in a row.

    27:21-27:22

    Sorry, tangent.

    27:23-27:24

It doesn't really work that way.

    27:24-27:27

    But somehow Rocky inspires that.

    27:30-27:33

I guess Eye of the Tiger is the only thing I can call it.

    27:36-27:46

There's something about seeing Rocky get beat to a pulp and then coming back victorious makes me think I could do it.

    27:48-27:49

    I can't.

    27:51-27:54

But you know, for like an hour, I really think I can.

    27:55-28:55

And I think in a sense, that's what happens even with the gospel. The people see, "Here's a man, Paul, beaten down but still victorious because he's not letting his circumstances get the better of him." That's inspiring. Paul's not going to let imprisonment stop him from preaching. In fact, his imprisonment's helping his preaching, so what am I scared of? Paul's doing it. And it's a truth that God uses the faithful to inspire his people. So why does persecution cause boldness? I kind of think that's why, but here's another question that really actually bothers me more. Why does freedom cause laziness? You would think in this culture, because there's no threat of imprisonment for handing out Bibles or tracks or preaching on the corner or whatever, you'd think that'd be happening a lot more.

    28:58-28:58

    But it's not.

    29:03-29:08

Many people just don't see the gospel worth proclaiming, worth standing up for, worth fighting for.

    29:09-29:12

Maybe we're just lacking some good examples in our day.

    29:15-29:18

Maybe you need to be that good example.

    29:19-29:23

So people see that circumstances haven't stolen your joy.

    29:24-29:30

Your circumstances haven't stopped you from joyfully reveling in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    29:34-29:37

So I will not be discouraged by circumstances.

    29:37-29:37

    Why?

    29:39-29:40

    Because the gospel is unstoppable.

    29:41-29:53

When I glory in the gospel, and I'm facing some tough circumstances, all that means is God is using a more strategic way to get his gospel advanced and in that I rejoice.

    29:56-30:23

One more thing, if you're not discouraged by circumstances, what's the other thing that typically will discourage you? People. People. I'm gonna give you another run at that because that was a great spot for an amen. You ready? If you're not discouraged by your circumstances, do you know what will discourage you? People.

    30:27-31:35

Well, it was true for the Apostle Paul. Look at verses 15 through 18. He said, "Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill. The the defense of the gospel, the former proclaimed Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely, but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that "I" what? "Rejoice." So if you're not going through some kind of a struggle, you're going through some kind of a person that's being a pain. Now Paul here obviously you caught he was speaking of two groups when he talked about people preaching the gospel. Some people they preach the gospel for the right reasons.

    31:35-31:55

he mentions in the latter half of verse 15, "But some preach the gospel out of envy and rivalry." What does that even mean? Well, obviously, word was getting out about Paul. So you have some other preachers going, "Well, why is he so popular?

    31:57-32:10

That should be me." You know, Paul's in prison, and that's all everybody's talking about is, you know, Paul's preaching to the Imperial Guard, and you know, converts that are chained to him, and Paul's doing this, and Paul's doing, that should be me.

    32:11-32:12

    You know what?

    32:13-32:15

I've heard Paul preach, and he's really not that great.

    32:17-32:18

    Especially compared to me.

    32:18-32:20

I think I'm a much better preacher than Paul.

    32:20-32:23

That should be me that people are talking about.

    32:23-32:27

I should be like the Billy Graham of this city, not Paul.

    32:30-32:31

    Envy and rivalry.

    32:33-32:40

So they're like, well, I'm gonna up my little preaching game bit, because I should be what people are talking about.

    32:42-32:45

But you have to understand this, the message was not in question.

    32:46-32:48

It's clear, Paul never called their message into question.

    32:49-32:54

He says they're preaching Christ, he says they're proclaiming Christ, verse 17.

    32:57-33:00

The message isn't in question, the issue here is their motives.

    33:01-33:44

You have to understand that to the Apostle Paul there was a huge difference, and there should be a huge difference to us. If somebody's preaching a false message, that needs to be corrected. You know, there's a ministry saying, "Well, Jesus wasn't really God. He didn't really raise from the dead." That's heresy, and we point that out. And we tell people, "You don't go to religious organizations like that." And that's why sometimes, you know, church, we come under fire if we say anything about, you know, Mormonism or Jehovah's Witnesses or Christian science.

    33:44-34:51

Well, it's all the same God. No, it's not the same God. We are worshiping Jesus Christ, God in the flesh. We do not endorse religions that deny the deity of Jesus Christ. Don't go to those places. It's not a Christian denomination. There's a difference between that and people who are actually preaching the truth of the Bible, but maybe their motives aren't the best. People often ask, "Well, what do you think about this ministry or that ministry?" You know, "Jeff, what do you think about this church? What do you think about Benny Hinn?" I get people ask me these questions. A lot of times I get to Jim, like, "What do you think about Benny Hinn?" I try not to. "What do you think about Jack Van Impey? What do you think about John Hagee? What do you think about these ministries? What do you think about ministries. Here's how you resolve that. What do you think about those ministries?

    34:51-35:15

Here's how you resolve that. Are they preaching the gospel? That's the first thing you have to examine. Are they preaching the gospel? Are they accurately representing the Word of God in their preaching and teaching? If they are, what Paul's attitude, great.

    35:16-35:17

Hey, if they're preaching the gospel, great.

    35:17-35:25

I might not agree with their motives, I might not agree with how they go about some things, but if they're preaching the gospel, that means the gospel's getting out, praise the Lord.

    35:31-35:34

Truth is more powerful than the package that it comes in, do you know that?

    35:36-35:45

If God could speak through Balaam's donkey, He can speak his truth through people even with bad motives.

    35:45-35:47

The truth is more powerful than the package it comes in.

    35:49-36:02

But sometimes, church, even in lesser issues, when we look at other ministries, even other ministries that are preaching the gospel, our knee-jerk reaction is to condemn versus rejoice.

    36:05-36:06

    And that's wrong.

    36:10-36:14

You know, I don't think that church is a good church because they have a coffee shop right in their lobby.

    36:15-36:17

    Are they preaching the gospel?

    36:18-36:18

    Yeah.

    36:19-36:21

Are there people that are going to that church that are hearing the gospel?

    36:23-36:23

    Yeah.

    36:24-36:28

Does it seem like Jesus Christ is making difference in the lives of people in that church?

    36:28-36:28

    Well, yeah.

    36:29-36:31

Then who cares about their stupid coffee shop?

    36:33-36:33

    Right?

    36:35-36:37

And someday we're gonna have a building and we're gonna have a coffee shop.

    36:39-36:41

but we're still gonna be preaching the gospel.

    36:43-36:47

Well, this church does things a little differently and I don't like the music in this church.

    36:47-36:49

In this church, are they preaching the gospel?

    36:51-36:53

Well, yeah, but I think that preacher's kind of a jerk.

    36:53-36:54

    Is he preaching the gospel?

    36:56-36:57

Yeah, but I don't like his attitude.

    36:57-36:58

    Is he preaching the gospel?

    36:59-37:00

    Well, yeah.

    37:02-37:08

Then praise the Lord, because the truth is more powerful than the package that it comes in, right?

    37:11-37:23

Paul says, verse 17, that these people that proclaim Christ out of rivalry, not sincerely, but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment, that just seems rotten.

    37:23-37:29

Like not only is Paul in prison, but they're trying to kick him while he's down, so to speak.

    37:31-39:40

You can imagine the message getting up saying, you know, I know a lot of you have heard the teaching of the Apostle Paul, you know why he's in prison, right? I'm sure he committed some grievous sin that he's been arrested for. Or, you know, in God's sovereignty, that's God's way of restricting Paul's influence. Or, every day's a Friday, and I want you to know that today God loves me more than he does Paul? Because Paul's in prison. I'm not. God loves me more. And Paul's like, "These people are just trying to afflict me out of rivalry." Well, why does that hurt? I wish. I don't know if it's a personality thing. I don't you have to learn? Honestly, I don't know. But I wish it was so much easier to dismiss that stuff. I do. I just, I wish it was easier to dismiss that stuff. I wish it was easier to dismiss criticism. I do. I wish it was. I wish somebody could come up, and it's happened to me a lot, somebody comes up to me either after service or they call me or they email me or whatever or show up at my house and they just criticize what I'm doing and I wish I could just be like yeah okay you're entitled to your opinion it hurts even worse than criticism is accusation It hurts when people falsely accuse your motives, falsely accuse you based on things that they assume but things they don't have information about. It hurts.

    39:41-39:58

Why does it hurt? Because what's the number one commodity in ministry? In You have to be trustworthy.

    39:58-40:08

Nobody's going to follow a pastor if they firmly believe, well, he preaches it, but it's not incorporated into his life at all.

    40:08-40:11

He talks a lot about Jesus, but we don't see any Jesus in him.

    40:12-40:20

And when your character's attacked, there's a sense in which that is attacked, and it sort of discounts your integrity, and it hurts.

    40:26-40:29

We should expect affliction from the world.

    40:32-40:44

But you know, I've had more sleepless nights, heartburn, and stress over church people than I've ever had over worldly people.

    40:45-40:52

I've had people that unashamedly, not Christians, attack me for things that I've said or done or whatever.

    40:54-40:55

    That has never bothered me.

    40:56-41:00

I'm like, they're lost, they're dead in their sin.

    41:01-41:01

    That doesn't hurt.

    41:02-41:06

What does hurt is when it's people that you think are on your team.

    41:13-41:15

with the criticisms, with the accusations.

    41:18-41:20

You know, it's real easy to lash back.

    41:21-41:22

    And Paul could have, right?

    41:23-41:30

Paul could have been like, "Listen, Church of Philippi, "they're saying these things about me, "but let me tell you something about them." But what did he say?

    41:32-41:40

He's like, "They're preaching Christ motivated by rivalry." Isn't that great?

    41:40-41:41

    They're preaching Christ.

    41:42-41:42

    Isn't that awesome?

    41:43-41:44

The word of the gospel is getting out.

    41:45-41:49

Their motives are completely backwards, but who cares because they're preaching Christ.

    41:49-41:50

    Isn't that awesome?

    41:53-41:54

    I need some of that.

    41:57-42:03

I'm still learning, so I'm preaching to all of us here.

    42:04-42:05

Don't let people get you discouraged.

    42:07-42:09

Don't let people get you discouraged.

    42:11-42:15

And Paul says some people preach out of goodwill, some people they preach out of love.

    42:16-42:23

They love God, they love the lost, they love the church, but here specifically he's talking about preaching out of love, referring to they love him, they love Paul.

    42:25-42:28

There's a sense in which they're saying, you know what, our brother needs us, let's get to work.

    42:30-42:31

    Let's get to work.

    42:31-42:34

So Paul, in wrapping up, he says, what then?

    42:38-42:47

Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, again talking about motives, Christ is proclaimed and in that I rejoice.

    42:48-42:51

Some people do it out of envy, some people do it out of love.

    42:52-42:55

It really doesn't matter as long as the gospel is proclaimed.

    42:57-42:59

You know, that's a sign of being sold out for the gospel.

    43:01-43:12

You don't care who's doing it or if they're doing it better than you or how many people they have or why they are doing it, you just rejoice because the message is getting out.

    43:14-43:16

Because the message is what matters.

    43:17-43:19

The message is what does God's work.

    43:20-43:22

The message is what leads to Christ.

    43:26-43:36

When I start to think that this is Jeff's work, Jeff needs to do this, and Jeff needs This is God's work.

    43:38-43:42

Because if Jeff gets hit by a bus this afternoon, the work continues.

    43:43-43:47

And next week, somebody else is going to be standing up here, proclaiming the gospel.

    43:50-43:52

The message will not be stopped.

    43:53-43:58

Not by a trial, and not by the poorly motivated people.

    44:01-44:07

So here's the thing, let's find our joy in the unstoppable gospel.

    44:09-44:12

And like Paul, what we're going to find is unstoppable joy.

Philippians 1. We're going to be looking at the first 11 verses. I love the church.

    00:14-00:31

Actually, it's sort of become the cool thing to say the opposite. Get online and look at some bloggers and some YouTube video makers.

    00:32-00:34

Do a search for it on Google.

    00:35-00:36

    I hate the church.

    00:38-00:39

    I hate the church.

    00:40-00:43

What some people say, I came across a couple of things.

    00:43-00:45

I'm not gonna read this all to you, but.

    00:48-00:52

Couple interesting things from people that say, I hate the church.

    00:53-02:00

Church is commonly attended by people who are not sure they attend. Do you know why you're here? Okay. Churches rarely teach the gospel that Jesus of Nazareth taught. Churches are often attended by a majority who are 20 years my elders and I am almost 40. Most church services are pitched to children and women, being non-inclusive of men and non-parents. Strangers are usually treated with suspicion and/or the membership mentality. Issues of real 21st century life are either not addressed or treated by shallow responses. Few who self-identifies Christians evidence any difference in their lifestyle to the majority in wider society. Churches are treated like entertainment centers instead of sacred communal spaces. Worship is superficial and shallow, evidence through, TWE music, T-W-E-E.

    02:00-02:01

    What's TWE music?

    02:01-02:08

Is that like more hipster than-- is that like off my hipster radar?

    02:08-02:11

TWE music, anybody heard of TWE music?

    02:13-02:15

Oh, that's-- Will, what's TWE music?

    02:19-02:22

Oh, it's supposed to be like tween without the N?

    02:23-02:24

    That is really hipster.

    02:25-02:26

    Wow, thank you, Will.

    02:26-02:27

I had no idea, thank you.

    02:29-02:37

It says, "Evidence through Tweed music "and platitudinous mumblings." All right, Will, do you know what platitudinous means?

    02:38-02:39

    I'm just kidding, I don't either.

    02:39-02:46

"Given the above, it's like holding a mirror "up to my own life, faith, and attitudes." And here's another one, this was a long letter.

    02:46-02:48

I'm just gonna read a couple things from it.

    02:49-02:56

This was sort of one of those open letter to the churches that I'm going to post on the internet and this thing kind of made its rounds.

    02:56-02:57

    Maybe you saw this.

    02:58-03:00

It says, "Dear church people, "I recently attended your church.

    03:02-03:08

"I don't know why I decided to get up early "on a Sunday morning and I'm not sure why exactly "I chose this church, but nonetheless, I went.

    03:09-03:17

"I guess it was because I overheard someone talking "about this man named Jesus and he seemed really edgy "and from what I gathered, he seemed like a rebel like me.

    03:18-03:22

"And then I heard that somehow he can help me "get rid of all this junk that is messing up my life.

    03:22-03:47

I'm not sure what you church people call it. I guess it's sin or something. So anyways, yeah, I was compelled but what I overheard And I didn't quite hear everything that guy was saying but he was telling the other person to check out their church I didn't catch what The church name was so I wound up here and he goes on he takes a little bit of a tangent But he's describing his experience at the church How he was looked at?

    03:48-03:56

weirdly because of his lip rings and punk hair, that says, "In the music, well, I will say the guitarist "was totally killer and the drums were sweet.

    03:56-03:59

"I didn't really know what you guys were singing about.

    03:59-04:09

"I didn't know the songs, "but I did see that Jesus guy's name a few times, "so I tried paying attention." Then he goes on, he says, "The speaker dude wasn't too bad.

    04:11-04:19

"He seemed like he really believed "what he was talking about." And he says, "All this to say, I guess I'm sure there's something I'm missing.

    04:19-04:25

There's probably something I didn't read somewhere, but I was really just hoping to find out about this Jesus guy.

    04:26-04:39

Sorry, church people, I can't do that church thing you guys do, but hey, if that's your thing, rather more power to you." But earlier on he says, "But can I just say, I really hate church.

    04:42-04:44

    I really hate church.

    04:47-04:59

Now we expect that from the world, but the alarming thing is you're seeing some, even Christians say things.

    04:59-05:00

These are hipster sayings, by the way.

    05:00-05:05

If you want to be hipster, learn words like twee and platitudinous.

    05:07-05:08

Here's another hipster thing to say.

    05:10-05:12

I love Jesus, but I hate the church.

    05:12-05:13

How many people have heard that?

    05:13-05:15

I love Jesus, but I hate the church.

    05:16-05:17

    That doesn't work.

    05:18-05:19

    Okay, it doesn't work.

    05:20-05:23

You're like, well sure it does.

    05:24-05:25

    No, it doesn't.

    05:26-05:27

    I'll prove it to you.

    05:30-05:39

If you came up to me and said, you know, Pastor Jeff, I like you, but I hate your wife, how do you think I'm gonna react to that?

    05:40-05:46

I'm like, "Oh, then you got nothing to do with me if you hate my wife, right?

    05:47-05:48

Is that how it works for you?

    05:49-05:50

    Is that how it is?

    05:51-05:51

    Ken?

    05:53-05:54

    Ken, I love you, man.

    05:54-05:55

    I do, I love you.

    05:56-05:58

I want nothing to do with your wife.

    06:00-06:06

How does that sit with you?" Like, "Package deal, dude." Okay.

    06:07-06:12

I love Jesus, but I hate his bride, the church.

    06:12-06:12

    Does that work?

    06:13-06:15

We can't even make that work in a human level.

    06:15-06:19

And we think we're gonna look at the God of the universe and say, I hate your wife.

    06:20-06:22

    Eh, bad idea.

    06:23-06:26

Okay, I love Jesus and guess what else I love?

    06:27-06:28

    I love his bride.

    06:29-06:32

I love Jesus and I love the church, amen?

    06:33-06:48

Last week I said, hey, how many people here so excited that it's Sunday, and like, almost every hand was like, "Oh, that's me! That's me! I love the church! I love the church!" Yeah, me too.

    06:50-06:51

The church is where God is working.

    06:53-06:58

The church is the bride of Christ that He died for. It is the body where you are a member.

    07:00-07:05

You know, VH1 had that series, "I Love the 80s." How many people have seen "I Love the 80s"? Have you seen that?

    07:06-07:08

    the greatest decade ever.

    07:11-07:12

And the '90s wasn't as cool.

    07:13-07:13

    Sorry.

    07:15-07:17

    I love the '80s.

    07:17-07:18

I'm sure it was for you.

    07:18-07:20

    I love the '80s.

    07:20-07:22

All the things I loved about a decade.

    07:22-07:35

And what we're going to see here in Philippians 1, the first 11 verses, is the apostle Paul is saying, "I love the church." but for reasons bigger than Pac-Man and jelly bracelets.

    07:37-07:37

    Okay?

    07:38-07:43

Paul says, "I love the church." Let's get to the intro first of all, Philippians 1.

    07:43-08:06

Paul and Timothy, servants of Jesus Christ, or Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the overseers and deacons, Grace to you and peace from God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    08:06-08:09

That's a typical Apostle Paul greeting.

    08:10-08:14

Grace to you and peace from God, our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    08:18-08:25

He says in verse three, I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you.

    08:29-08:36

excuse me, every prayer of mine for you all, rather, making my prayer with, what's that last word?

    08:37-08:37

    Joy.

    08:39-08:43

So Paul says, "When I'm praying for you, "my prayer is full of," what?

    08:44-08:45

Go ahead, you can say it.

    08:46-08:47

    Joy, right?

    08:47-08:49

Isn't that what we're going after this year?

    08:49-08:50

    Joy.

    08:52-09:01

And Paul says, well, first of all, he says, "When I'm praying for you, I thank God for you." And we talked about that a couple of weeks ago.

    09:02-09:06

You know, we shouldn't be thanked for our service.

    09:06-09:07

    Does the church appreciate you?

    09:07-09:08

    Sure, do I appreciate you?

    09:09-09:09

    Absolutely.

    09:10-09:13

But you don't do what you do to get thanked.

    09:13-09:16

We do what we do because we are servants of Jesus Christ.

    09:17-09:22

So when Paul was thinking about the Philippians, he didn't say, hey, thank you, thank you, thank you.

    09:23-09:25

He says, I thank God for you.

    09:25-09:26

    Do you see the difference?

    09:27-09:30

because they're just servants of Christ, just like Paul.

    09:33-09:41

And everything that we're going to see, they did to minister to Paul, it was just all from God anyway.

    09:41-09:42

So Paul says, "Hey, you know what?

    09:42-09:47

"When the thank yous are being given out, "they go one place, they go to God.

    09:47-09:48

    "They go to God.

    09:48-09:56

"I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, "making my prayer with joy.

    09:57-10:03

Now again, there are lots of attitudes that we can have when we are praying for the church.

    10:05-10:06

    And I've been there.

    10:06-10:09

Sometimes it's feeling burdened for the church.

    10:10-10:15

Sometimes it's being discouraged over the church.

    10:15-10:17

Sometimes it's being angry with the church.

    10:18-10:39

Paul says, "When I'm praying, "the attitude that accompanies is joy." So let me ask you this morning, can you honestly say, again, whether this is your first time here or your 53rd time here or whatever, can you honestly say, "I love the church"?

    10:39-10:40

    Can you say that?

    10:41-10:42

Can you say it and mean it?

    10:43-10:46

I'm gonna give you a try, all right?

    10:47-10:51

On the count of three, I wanna hear you say, if you don't mean it, don't say it, right?

    10:53-10:56

Like, let's leave the hypocrisy in the parking lot, okay?

    10:57-11:03

And don't pick it up on your way out, but count of three, let me hear you say, I love the church, you ready?

    11:04-11:05

    One, two, three.

    11:06-11:07

    I love the church.

    11:08-11:09

    That was pretty convincing.

    11:10-11:12

I'm gonna give you another run at that.

    11:15-11:16

But you know, I can say that.

    11:18-11:25

You're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, why do you love the church?" Well, I love the church for the same reason that the Apostle Paul loved the church.

    11:26-11:27

And that's what we're going to look at.

    11:27-11:28

    Do you have your outline?

    11:30-11:31

Why do I love the church?

    11:32-11:36

First of all, it's because it is where I am part of God's work.

    11:39-11:39

Why do I love the church?

    11:40-11:42

Because it is where I am part of God's work.

    11:42-12:13

Look at verses 5 and 6. Again, Paul, he says, "As I pray for you, I'm thankful and I'm joyful." Why, Paul? What's going on here? He says, "Because of your partnership in the gospel, from the first day until now, and I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

    12:14-12:15

    Let's pause there.

    12:15-12:19

Why is Paul praying and so thankful and so joyful?

    12:21-12:29

He says, "It is because of your partnership." Some translations, fellowship, that's koinonia in the Greek.

    12:30-12:33

It's partnering in a work that God is doing.

    12:33-12:37

Understand that this happens nowhere else.

    12:38-13:04

Right? The work that happens in the church doesn't happen in any other organization or institution anywhere in the world. It doesn't happen at a school. It doesn't happen at a hospital. It doesn't happen at card club. It doesn't happen at bingo. It doesn't happen anywhere else. God says, "I'm going to do something and here is where I'm going to do I'm going to do it in the church.

    13:06-13:11

And that's why Paul says, you know, I'm so joyful because it is with you, church, in Philippi.

    13:12-13:15

We're partnering together in the work that God is doing.

    13:16-13:18

You're like, well, what work is God doing?

    13:19-13:20

    Well, look at verse five.

    13:20-13:23

You tell me, because of your partnership in what?

    13:24-13:25

    In the gospel.

    13:25-13:26

Do you see that in the text?

    13:27-13:29

Because of your partnership in the gospel.

    13:30-13:34

Paul doesn't say, "I'm so joyful for you because you sent me a gift," which they did, and he was thankful.

    13:36-13:53

But he says, "What I'm most joyful about, not that you sent Epaphroditus, I'm excited about that too, he's been a blessing to me, but here's the real reason I'm so thankful for you, because we're partnering in the gospel together." What is the gospel?

    13:56-14:01

What is the gospel? I'd just like to remind you what the gospel is from the most famous verse in the Bible.

    14:01-14:03

You know the most famous verse in the Bible, right?

    14:04-14:07

John 3,16. How many know John 3,16?

    14:07-14:09

All right, I'm going to give you a run at that here in a second.

    14:09-14:19

Why is it so famous? Because John 3,16 encompasses almost the entire scope of the gospel in just one verse.

    14:19-14:21

That's why it's so often quoted.

    14:21-14:35

That's why, you know, I'm sure today when you're watching the Stillers beat the Eagles, when you're watching the Stillers beat the Eagles, we don't have anybody here from Philadelphia, do we?

    14:36-14:42

But you're going to see somebody with the John 3 16 sign because it encompasses the gospel.

    14:43-14:45

And if you're taking notes, what is the gospel?

    14:46-14:50

Well, from John 3 16, the gospel is four things, eight words.

    14:51-14:53

It's just four things, eight words.

    14:53-14:54

    Write these eight words down.

    14:55-14:58

First of all, let's quote it.

    14:58-14:59

    Okay?

    15:00-15:00

    Ready?

    15:00-15:02

    One, two, three, go.

    15:02-15:08

For God so loved the world that He...

    15:14-15:15

    That...

    15:15-15:16

    Beautiful.

    15:16-15:25

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life." That's the whole gospel.

    15:25-15:26

    Four things.

    15:26-15:27

    What's the gospel?

    15:27-15:29

First of all, number one, God loves.

    15:31-15:32

Isn't that how the gospel starts?

    15:33-15:33

    Isn't that where it starts?

    15:34-15:35

    It starts because God loves.

    15:37-15:47

And so many people, you know, their exposure to God, and from the teaching they hear, the church that they grew up in or whatever, is God's out to get you.

    15:48-15:49

    God's out to get you.

    15:49-15:52

God's this cranky old man in heaven and he's out to get you.

    15:53-15:54

    That's not the gospel.

    15:55-15:56

    The gospel is God loves.

    15:59-16:03

Understand that there's nothing lovable about us.

    16:04-16:08

You know, when I look at my sons, oh, they're just so cute.

    16:08-16:10

Oh, I just love you guys so much.

    16:12-16:16

Some people think that's what God's like when he looks down at us, like, oh, they're so precious.

    16:17-16:19

We're like a basket of puppies to God.

    16:20-16:21

We're not a basket of puppies.

    16:22-16:23

    We're a basket of snakes.

    16:24-16:32

We are wayward, rebellious, bent to evil human beings that have rejected our creator by nature.

    16:33-16:34

    That's what God sees.

    16:35-16:36

So that's what makes his love even more amazing.

    16:37-16:46

God says, I'm going to choose to love them anyway, Though they've rejected me, though they persist in going in their own way, I'm going after them in love.

    16:46-16:49

That's how the gospel starts. God loves.

    16:50-16:55

So what's the second part? God loves, so God what? God gave.

    16:57-17:01

God gave. What did He give?

    17:02-17:06

    He didn't give a list of do's and don'ts.

    17:07-17:16

He didn't give some way that we can work our way out of the problem we're in.

    17:16-17:17

    What did He give?

    17:17-17:18

You tell me, what did He give?

    17:19-17:21

    His only begotten Son.

    17:22-17:27

The Bible says that God took on flesh and blood.

    17:28-17:30

God became a man, Jesus Christ.

    17:31-17:38

among us and died a horrible death, nailed to a cross, publicly executed.

    17:41-18:04

But being nailed to the cross wasn't really the pain, you understand that. It was painful beyond words, but that wasn't really the pain that Jesus was experiencing to the highest degree. What Jesus was experiencing was God pouring out His wrath that I deserve and that you deserve while Jesus was on the cross, God was pouring out His wrath on Him.

    18:05-18:06

    Do you understand that?

    18:07-18:10

Jesus Christ came to save us from God's wrath.

    18:11-18:16

You could say that God is actually saving us from Himself in Jesus Christ.

    18:16-18:16

    Why?

    18:17-18:18

    Because He loves us.

    18:18-18:19

    Isn't that incredible?

    18:21-18:23

that God loves, therefore God gave.

    18:27-18:30

And then there's the rest of the verse is about us.

    18:31-18:35

We believe that whosoever believes in him, we believe.

    18:37-18:41

Understand that just because Jesus died on the cross doesn't mean that everybody automatically goes to heaven.

    18:42-18:46

All right, that God's like, I have this gift of salvation and you're taking it whether you want it or not.

    18:47-18:50

There's an aspect in which we receive by faith.

    18:51-18:52

We can't work for God's gift.

    18:53-18:54

    We can't earn it.

    18:54-19:04

We can't be good enough little boys and girls that God's like, "Okay, I'm going to give you a gift "because you've been so good." We receive this gift of grace that he's given.

    19:06-19:07

    And that's through belief.

    19:09-19:10

    That's through belief.

    19:10-19:19

Understand that so many people think, "Okay, because God did this for me, "now I'm going to do something for him "and hopefully God will be happy with me." It doesn't work that way.

    19:24-19:26

What God wants you to do is to receive His Son.

    19:29-19:34

And the last part, "Whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have," what?

    19:36-19:40

"Everlasting life." We, so the last two words is we live.

    19:41-19:41

    We live.

    19:42-19:47

Jesus Christ didn't come into the world to turn bad people into good people, you know that?

    19:48-19:52

Jesus Christ came to turn dead people into alive people.

    19:52-20:01

The Bible says, Ephesians 2, "We were dead in our trespasses and sins, "but he has made us alive with Jesus Christ." He's come to give us life.

    20:03-20:04

    Okay?

    20:04-20:16

Receiving Jesus Christ isn't, "Well, I wanna be a better person," or, "I sure just don't wanna go to hell, "and he's my ticket out, he's my fire insurance." Jesus Christ is life.

    20:18-20:22

So God loves, God gave, we believe and we live.

    20:22-20:23

    That's the gospel.

    20:23-20:26

And Paul says, you know why I have so much joy?

    20:26-20:28

It's because we're partnering in this together.

    20:29-20:29

    Isn't that awesome?

    20:30-20:34

Isn't that awesome that God's like, I got the greatest news that I can give the world.

    20:35-20:40

You live in a lost and dying and decaying world that is heading straight to hell.

    20:41-20:44

And God's like, and I stepped in so that I could deliver people.

    20:46-20:54

Instead of getting the worst that I have to offer, I gave people the best that I have to offer so that they can have eternal life in glory in paradise with me forever.

    20:54-20:55

    Isn't that awesome?

    20:55-20:59

And God's like, by the way, here's how I wanna communicate that message through the what?

    21:00-21:01

    Through the church.

    21:02-21:03

    Through the church.

    21:05-21:07

God's like, I'm going to do something eternal and something awesome.

    21:08-21:10

And you're in on that with me.

    21:11-21:12

So Paul's like, that's why I'm so excited.

    21:13-21:14

We get to like work on this together.

    21:15-21:15

    Isn't that cool?

    21:18-21:19

    It's beyond that.

    21:20-21:29

Notice he says, "Your partnership in the gospel "from the first day until now." Reminder, faithfulness.

    21:30-21:34

Faithfulness is not just starting strong.

    21:34-21:36

Everybody starts strong, by the way.

    21:37-21:43

Faithfulness isn't starting strong, nor is faithfulness sporadically pitching in.

    21:43-21:44

    Oh, partnership in the gospel.

    21:44-21:45

    That sounds interesting.

    21:45-21:48

Maybe I'll try that a couple of times a year, stop by, offer my service.

    21:49-21:50

    That's not faithfulness either.

    21:50-21:56

Notice Paul says, "From the first day until now." Consistency, consistency.

    21:59-22:01

The next verse is often applied to individuals.

    22:01-22:08

And I'm sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

    22:10-22:13

A lot of times that verse is applied to individuals.

    22:13-22:18

In fact, you remember that song, that little chorus from the 90s that was based on this verse?

    22:18-22:19

How many people remember that song?

    22:19-22:20

    Anybody else sing it?

    22:20-22:21

    That song was horrible.

    22:23-22:28

Great verse, great premise, lousy tune.

    22:28-22:33

Okay, can I get an amen on that or am I just like up here by myself on that?

    22:34-22:35

    Okay, sorry.

    22:36-22:39

The person that wrote that song is obviously here and I owe you a big apology.

    22:42-22:44

    Great message behind that song.

    22:44-22:45

Let's just leave it at that.

    22:50-22:51

    Now what?

    22:53-22:56

Notice that Paul is talking to the church corporately.

    22:56-22:59

    Corporately, okay?

    22:59-23:05

So this verse really applies to the church because the work happens in the church.

    23:06-23:07

    Do you understand that?

    23:09-23:12

He's talking about his partnership with this church in the gospel.

    23:12-23:20

He says, "To all the saints," here at Philippi, "the overseers, the deacons," he's like church and leadership, I'm talking to all of you.

    23:21-23:35

In the same vein, he says, "All of you, I am sure of this, "that he who began a good work in you, "in all of you, as a church, he will complete it." He will complete it.

    23:36-23:37

The work happens in the church.

    23:38-23:45

And you're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, "things don't look good for the church." I don't know if you've noticed, but we live in a day of moral decay.

    23:46-23:51

We live in a day of not only sin, but public applause for sin.

    23:51-24:00

We live in a day when the government tries to legislate sin and put a stamp of approval on sin.

    24:02-24:04

Things don't look good for the church.

    24:05-24:06

    Well, even in the church.

    24:08-24:11

Newsflash, you're not everything that you need to be yet.

    24:12-24:12

    Right?

    24:14-24:16

    And me too, right?

    24:18-24:22

How many people are still being conformed to the image of God's Son?

    24:22-24:24

God's still a work in progress with you?

    24:25-24:25

    Yeah, with me too.

    24:26-24:31

I'm so thankful for how far the Lord has brought me, but I'm like, well, I have a long way to go.

    24:31-24:35

But every day, God's still working that process out.

    24:35-24:36

I'll talk about that in a couple of minutes.

    24:39-24:47

So you're not what you ought to be, so when you get together, you become a group of people who aren't what they ought to be, in a church that has leadership that isn't everything it ought to be.

    24:48-24:50

And well, here's the good news though.

    24:52-25:04

Look again at verse six, Paul says, "I am sure of this." No suppose, no maybe, probably, possibly, I'm gonna give you an over and under on that.

    25:05-25:09

Paul's like, "I am absolutely sure about something." What are you absolutely sure about, Paul?

    25:10-25:16

That he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion.

    25:17-25:18

So the question is, who began the work?

    25:20-25:21

Who began the work in the church?

    25:21-25:22

    Who did that?

    25:23-25:24

    God did, right?

    25:26-25:26

    God did.

    25:27-25:30

So what are the chances that God's going to finish what he starts?

    25:31-25:31

    What are the chances?

    25:32-25:34

Let's do a percentage on that.

    25:35-25:37

All right, just go ahead and shout it out.

    25:37-25:40

What are the chances, by percentage, that God's going to finish what he starts?

    25:41-25:43

A hundred, yeah, that's what I came up with.

    25:43-25:50

Do you think God's ever like, well, I think I'm gonna do this thing with Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh, North, nah, I'm just gonna let that one sit for a while.

    25:50-25:52

Maybe get back to it, maybe not.

    25:52-25:55

And this church is like, God, are you ever gonna come back and keep working on us?

    25:57-26:01

Paul says, I am absolutely convinced when God starts something, he finishes it.

    26:01-26:03

And that's what he's going to do in you.

    26:03-26:05

Isn't it great that God's still at work?

    26:06-26:07

    He never lets go.

    26:09-26:16

Notice Paul says this, the consistency from the first day until now, and like, how long's this gonna go?

    26:16-26:22

Well, he says, he'll bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

    26:23-26:29

He uses that same expression, day of Jesus Christ, in verse 10, actually.

    26:30-26:31

    He's talking about glorification.

    26:33-26:36

So God started something here and God's going to finish it.

    26:37-26:40

That's good news because it sort of takes the pressure off.

    26:41-26:48

You know, Jeff, if this church is going to grow, if these people are going to become more Christ-like, if discipleship is going to happen, it's all up to you, Pastor Jeff.

    26:49-26:50

    It's not.

    26:52-26:56

You know, if people are going to become passionate worshipers, it's all up to you, Sam.

    26:56-26:57

    It's not.

    26:58-26:59

    This is God's work.

    27:00-27:02

And we pray that God uses us, amen?

    27:03-27:04

    But this is God's work.

    27:06-27:08

Nothing's going to get in the way of God's work.

    27:11-27:14

I am convinced that God has started something here, and he's gonna finish it.

    27:15-27:16

    He's gonna finish it.

    27:18-27:25

So let me ask you, what can you point to in your life right now that says, this is how God is using me for his purposes?

    27:29-27:30

    What happens in the church?

    27:33-27:41

And if you consider this to be your church home, or if you are considering this church to be your church home, understand this, we want you to be a part of what God is doing.

    27:42-27:43

    You understand that?

    27:44-27:53

I don't see anywhere in scripture, I've read through the Bible a couple of times, I don't see anywhere in scripture where God calls somebody to be like a sideline sitter.

    27:54-28:08

Like, okay, you're called to lead a small group, and you're called to lead worship, and you're called to do this, and you're called to work in children's, and you just sit on the bench, and we'll call you if we need you.

    28:09-28:10

    Is that biblical?

    28:11-28:12

    Absolutely not.

    28:13-28:18

The church is a body of members all working together, doing our part.

    28:19-28:21

We want you to be a part of what God's doing here.

    28:22-28:23

You ask, well, what can I do?

    28:24-28:24

    I'm so glad you asked.

    28:24-28:27

We got a list of areas where you can be involved.

    28:32-28:40

So many times I talk to people that say, "Well, I'm not even sure where to start." Well here's where you start with two questions.

    28:41-28:45

The first question is, "How has God equipped you?" How has God equipped you?

    28:46-28:49

And the second question ties in with that one.

    28:51-28:52

What do you have a passion for?

    28:55-28:56

What do you have a passion for?

    28:57-29:10

what I found with people, I can't think of any exceptions, what I found with people, their spiritual giftedness and the thing that they have a passion for are the same thing, the same thing.

    29:12-29:16

That's how God's cut you, that's how he's equipped you, that's how he's gifted you.

    29:17-29:20

So I would ask you, well, what has God given you a passion for?

    29:21-29:34

And I would say, well, come and talk to me so we can get you plugged in in this church or doing what God has equipped you for, whether it's working with kids or helping with set up, being part of a small group, which everybody needs to be part in one way, shape, or form.

    29:34-29:37

But how has God equipped you?

    29:38-29:39

What do you have a passion for?

    29:40-29:41

    There's work to do.

    29:43-29:47

And one of the reasons we love the church is because it's where I am part of God's work.

    29:49-29:51

God's like, "Hey, I'm doing something big.

    29:51-29:52

"Do you want to come and do it with me?

    29:52-29:53

"It's going to last for eternity.

    29:54-29:55

    "It's going to change lives.

    29:56-29:57

    It's going to bring healing.

    29:59-30:00

    Sign me up.

    30:03-30:08

That's why I love the church, because, like man, I can come here and be part of something God's doing.

    30:09-30:10

Well, why else do you love the church?

    30:10-30:11

    Well, here's the second reason.

    30:12-30:13

Because it is where I'm comforted.

    30:14-30:16

Because it is where I am comforted.

    30:16-30:17

    Look at verse seven.

    30:18-30:25

Paul says, "It is right for me to feel this way about you all because I hold you in my heart.

    30:28-30:42

For you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel." I love the church because that is where I'm comforted.

    30:42-30:45

Paul says, "It's right that I feel this way." Feel what way?

    30:45-30:48

    Thankful, joyful, confident.

    30:52-30:57

Paul says, "I hold you in my heart." That's a phrase that means, it's just deep affection.

    30:59-31:00

    Deep affection.

    31:02-31:04

Holding someone in your heart, you know what that means, right?

    31:05-31:08

Holding someone in your heart, that's deep affection.

    31:13-31:17

You know, my best friend is somebody I've known for just a little over 37 years.

    31:18-31:23

And when I see Darren, my thought isn't, oh, I like him, he's nice.

    31:25-31:26

    Good looking, true.

    31:29-31:30

    But a nice fellow.

    31:30-31:32

So he's somebody I hold in my heart.

    31:35-31:36

    That's deep affection.

    31:40-31:44

And also, for example, my wife, we just like wrote like a book about that.

    31:45-31:45

    Deep affection.

    31:48-31:49

I like you, Aaron, you're nice.

    31:51-31:53

    I hold in my heart.

    31:55-32:02

And honestly, church, over the past year, that's how I've grown to feel about you.

    32:04-32:05

I hold you in my heart.

    32:06-32:07

    I love those people.

    32:09-32:09

    I do.

    32:13-32:17

Now, what causes this type of affection?

    32:19-32:20

    Well, church, here it is.

    32:21-32:23

Where was, by the way, where was Paul when he wrote this?

    32:25-32:27

He was in a prison, right?

    32:29-32:35

And the Philippians made great efforts to minister to Paul while he was in jail.

    32:35-32:37

That's why he held them in his heart.

    32:37-32:38

    And jot this down.

    32:39-32:41

    What causes this deep affection?

    32:42-32:44

It's being loved when you're down and out.

    32:45-32:45

    Isn't that true?

    32:47-32:47

    Isn't that true?

    32:48-32:53

When someone loves you when you're down and out, that causes deep affection.

    32:55-33:10

You know, circling back to my wife, something that just, you know, a few years ago, we were, not we so much, but me, just in ministry coming under the gun and just getting beat up by a lot of people for a lot of reasons and just a lot of stuff going on.

    33:10-33:13

And I'll just never forget the day Erin came up.

    33:13-33:19

She goes, "I'm on your side." I'm just like, all right, then bring it, everybody else.

    33:19-33:21

But that just meant the world to me.

    33:21-33:25

When I was down and out, here comes somebody that says, look, it doesn't matter what happens, I'm on your side.

    33:26-33:27

    I am with you.

    33:30-33:32

And that's what Paul was experiencing here.

    33:32-33:35

And listen, church, we're not here to play church.

    33:36-33:37

    We are the church.

    33:41-33:45

And if we're going to be the church, what that means is we need to minister to one another when we're down and outs.

    33:48-33:54

In chapter 2, verse 30, again, the church was sending their love to Paul through Epaphroditus.

    33:54-34:00

And actually, we're going to see when we get to this section, this guy almost died in the mission.

    34:02-34:02

    Okay?

    34:02-34:11

So it wasn't like he shows up with a fruit basket and drops it off, and the church of Philippi says, "Hi." He almost died getting there.

    34:12-34:15

So how do you think that made Paul feel towards the Philippians?

    34:16-34:22

You risked like one of your main guys to show me that you love me.

    34:22-34:24

That's why I hold you in my heart.

    34:25-34:28

This should be a place of encouragement and refuge.

    34:29-34:32

This should be a place of uplifting and compassion.

    34:34-34:43

Church, when your family has abandoned you, when work is the rat race, and when you're You're worn out and beat down.

    34:45-34:47

You should say, I can't wait 'til Sunday.

    34:48-34:49

    I can't wait 'til Sunday.

    34:49-34:50

    Why, are you sleeping in?

    34:51-34:51

    No.

    34:51-34:52

    (laughs)

    34:52-34:54

    No, I'm not sleeping in.

    34:54-34:55

Do you know what happens Sunday?

    34:55-34:59

As I go to those people who pick me up when life knocks me down.

    34:59-35:01

    That's what happens on Sunday.

    35:03-35:05

I can't wait for small group.

    35:05-35:06

I can't wait for small group.

    35:06-35:08

    I can't wait for, why?

    35:08-35:11

Because I have a group of brothers I sit down and pray with.

    35:15-35:20

That when I'm discouraged and when I'm hurting, I have people that surround me that love me.

    35:22-35:23

    Can't wait for that.

    35:25-35:28

You know, that's the number one complaint people have about the church.

    35:29-35:31

I've been around the block a few times.

    35:31-35:32

    I've heard it.

    35:32-35:36

"Well, I went to that church and nobody cares.

    35:37-35:38

    I felt detached.

    35:38-35:39

    Couldn't plug in.

    35:42-35:48

It's impossible to keep up with ministering to people when you expect one or two to do it.

    35:49-35:50

    Understand that.

    35:52-35:59

Even at our small size now, it's impossible for me to minister to everybody to the degree in which I'd like to do it.

    35:59-36:00

    I'd love to.

    36:00-36:02

I'd love to spend two hours with each of you every week.

    36:02-36:03

    I would.

    36:03-36:05

    I absolutely would.

    36:05-36:06

    But understand, that's impossible.

    36:07-36:10

as we grow as becoming more and more impossible.

    36:11-36:14

That's why we want you involved in a small group.

    36:14-36:16

Understand that it's not a gimmick, it's not a fad.

    36:17-36:18

Get involved in a small group.

    36:19-36:23

Invest yourself in relationships with people who are going to love you and care for you.

    36:24-36:26

Get involved in a small group.

    36:27-36:33

Right now we're working with, we have some families that wanna host and lead and start some new small groups.

    36:33-36:35

We're working on that right now.

    36:35-36:39

This is a great time to jump on board, but you have to be connected.

    36:41-36:48

You're not going to experience this kind of a comfort and refuge if you just slip in Sunday, slip out Sunday, see you next Sunday.

    36:49-36:50

You gotta get involved with people.

    36:50-36:51

    You gotta get involved.

    36:54-36:56

Small groups is where discipleship happens.

    36:56-36:59

It's where relationships are made, but also it's where comfort is given.

    37:01-37:03

That's why Paul says, you know, you guys are in my heart.

    37:04-37:16

in prison and you, you've ministered, you, he said, you're partakers with me of grace both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.

    37:19-37:38

How sweet that is. Then finally, why do I love the church? Because it is where I grow in the knowledge of God. So Paul's joyfully praying for the church. What's And we're going to see here in verses eight through 11, he's praying for spiritual maturity for the church.

    37:38-37:39

    That's what he's praying for.

    37:42-37:45

I'm joyfully praying that you get your own church facilities.

    37:45-37:49

I'm joyfully praying that you get your own church chariot.

    37:49-37:52

No, I'm praying for your spiritual maturity.

    37:53-37:54

Look at verses eight through 11.

    37:56-37:58

I want you to take a note here.

    37:59-38:01

He's going to give sort of a little list.

    38:03-38:07

And in this list, each thing that he gives is the foundation for the next one.

    38:08-38:15

Okay, so it's sort of like you have to start here and then you get here and then you get here, but each one lays the foundation for the next.

    38:15-38:18

So kind of keep that in the back of your mind as you read through this with me.

    38:19-38:49

Paul says, "And it is my prayer "that your love may abound more and more, "with knowledge and all discernment, "so that you may approve what is excellent "and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, "filled with the fruit of righteousness "that comes through Jesus Christ "to the glory and praise of God." So I wanna look through this very quickly here.

    38:49-38:58

We could spend like a whole sermon on each one of these, but just to understand this path of spiritual maturity, where does it start?

    38:58-38:59

    It starts with love.

    39:00-39:03

Agape, that's the choice of the will love.

    39:05-39:10

He says, "I'm praying, first of all, "that your love may abound more and more.

    39:10-39:11

    "You have it.

    39:13-39:20

"Let's throw some gas on that fire." So what does this love look like?

    39:20-39:26

Well, he uses a couple words to describe love as you go in the next layer here on the foundation.

    39:27-39:28

    Knowledge and discernment.

    39:30-39:35

Knowledge and discernment. Knowledge means this, it's love according to God's Word.

    39:38-40:00

Love according to God's Word. We should love each other, right? All in favor of loving each other? Okay, all right, now we're gonna need a volunteer. Who wants to define what love is? Yeah, bad idea, right, to take volunteers for that? I That's a weird church.

    40:03-40:06

No, that's not how we're going to show love for one another.

    40:07-40:10

Do you know how I feel loved by people is when they leave me alone?

    40:11-40:12

So that's the kind of church.

    40:12-40:15

No, let's let God's word define what love is, all right?

    40:17-40:18

    Love according to God's word.

    40:18-40:19

    What's God's word?

    40:19-40:21

What's the definition of love from there?

    40:21-40:23

    Sacrificial, right?

    40:24-40:25

    Your needs ahead of mine.

    40:27-40:30

watching each other's backs, that kind of love.

    40:31-40:37

And then he says discernment, that's insight on how to apply this knowledge.

    40:38-40:39

Like, what do you mean by that?

    40:40-40:42

Insight on how to apply this knowledge, okay.

    40:44-40:45

    What's that mean?

    40:45-40:58

Well, let me give you, for example, it is a loving thing to confront a Christian brother or sister when they are involved in sin, true or false?

    41:00-41:05

You see your brother in sin and you need to talk to them about that.

    41:05-41:06

Is that a loving thing, true or false?

    41:07-41:09

    True, true.

    41:10-41:12

Discernment, okay, well, we know that's the loving thing.

    41:12-41:15

Discernment is figuring out how to go about that, right?

    41:17-41:21

It's more than just walking up like, "Yeah, Sam, you're sinning, totally knock it off.

    41:23-41:26

"Did my job." It's understanding how to do that.

    41:27-41:29

That's what he's talking about with discernment.

    41:29-41:31

    It's insight.

    41:34-41:37

You see, some people just wanna knock others back in line.

    41:40-41:42

But they don't start with love.

    41:44-41:46

You ever known somebody like that?

    41:46-41:48

That's their job, they're sort of the church watchdog.

    41:51-41:52

Love has to be the foundation.

    41:52-41:57

Some people just want to love and be nice and not do anything to stop destructive behaviors.

    42:02-42:24

You know, people, you know, people in the small group are like, "I'm just having a really hard time right now. And, you know, I've been running around on my wife and..." "Oh, oh, oh, what do I say? What do I say?" "Well, I guess as long as, you know, don't have more than three affairs, I guess..." "What do I say about that?" Insight.

    42:26-42:27

    Loving people.

    42:30-42:32

Using insight and how to apply that.

    42:34-42:35

    Next thing on the list.

    42:35-42:42

Okay, so you're loving people according to God's word and according to the insight, you know, applying the wisdom and using that.

    42:43-42:45

Next thing is approving what is excellence.

    42:46-42:48

Anyone can tell the difference between good and bad.

    42:49-42:52

few people can tell the difference between good and best.

    42:54-42:57

That's why he says, so that you may approve what is excellent.

    42:57-43:02

We have limited time and resources and we must grow to approve the best way to use them.

    43:02-43:03

    Do you understand that?

    43:04-43:08

So our leaders sit down and say, we need to decide what we're going to do as a church.

    43:11-43:21

And somebody's like, well, I think that we should have like this, you know, big pumpkin carving ministry year round, and that's what we invest our time and energy in.

    43:21-43:23

    Ah, let's rethink that.

    43:23-43:28

Is that the best way that we can reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ?

    43:33-43:36

Parents, you have to do this for your family.

    43:37-43:39

Teach your children how to make the best choices.

    43:40-43:41

    Understand that, parents.

    43:42-43:45

So many times we teach kids, well, this is good and this is bad.

    43:45-43:46

And yeah, you should do that.

    43:47-43:52

But parents, you also have to teach your children, okay, this is good, but this is best.

    43:55-43:56

    Okay, you have to help.

    43:56-43:58

That's part of discipling your kids.

    44:00-44:05

And then, and so be pure and blameless.

    44:06-44:07

    What does that mean?

    44:07-44:08

That means genuine and with integrity.

    44:10-44:12

    Genuine and with integrity.

    44:13-44:17

That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel, We work so hard to help you apply the word.

    44:18-44:19

You know what, my job would be easy.

    44:19-44:24

Do you know how long sermon prep would take me if I just got up and explained what the text meant?

    44:24-44:27

Sermon prep would probably take me two hours a week.

    44:28-44:31

How long do I actually spend on sermon prep, Aaron?

    44:34-44:34

    What's that?

    44:36-44:42

I have no, it's anywhere between 15, 25, sometimes more.

    44:43-44:45

Like, why are you spending all that time?

    44:46-44:53

Well, part of it is, well, it starts with understanding the text, sure, but the other part of that is helping you apply what it says.

    44:55-44:57

You know, if I just said, well, good to see you today.

    44:58-45:03

Here's the text and here's what it means, and you leave, go, oh, that was awfully fascinating what he said about the text.

    45:04-45:06

What are we going for here?

    45:07-45:12

Being pure and blameless, genuine and with integrity, applying the word of God.

    45:13-45:15

    Applying the Word of God.

    45:15-45:16

    We want to help you.

    45:16-45:21

So if this is what God's Word says, therefore how should I respond to that?

    45:21-45:27

What choices should I make that reflect that I believe God says what he means and means what he says?

    45:27-45:30

How can I reflect that in my life?

    45:33-45:35

It's awfully easy here, but what about at work?

    45:36-45:37

    What about at school?

    45:37-45:39

Do you have areas of hypocrisy?

    45:42-45:47

Let me ask you this, at your workplace or at school, how do people judge Christianity based on your life?

    45:48-45:49

    Well, that's a good question.

    45:50-46:00

Think of all the unsaved people that you work with, associate with, that you know, how would they evaluate Christianity just by looking at you?

    46:01-46:07

Oh, Christianity is a bitter and harsh thing, or apparently there's no standard.

    46:08-46:13

You can talk how you want, act how you want, do whatever you want.

    46:16-46:20

How are people evaluating the gospel of Christ when they look at your life?

    46:21-46:33

See, that's why Paul says, "When we love one another with knowledge and discernment and grow in approving what is excellent," that gets us to the place where we are growing to be genuine and with integrity.

    46:35-46:44

And then he says, "Filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ." The fruit of righteousness.

    46:45-46:49

That kind of circles back to what we were saying before about God doing a work in the church.

    46:53-47:01

God wants to do something through you, but listen, it has to sit on this other foundation.

    47:03-47:06

Well, I'm going to do something for God today, and we just set out to do it.

    47:06-47:08

    It doesn't work that way.

    47:11-47:12

You're like, well, how does it work?

    47:13-47:17

Well, I brought something today, something that I use every day of my life.

    47:18-47:19

    You know what this is?

    47:20-47:21

    A shower head, right.

    47:25-47:29

All right, confession time in church.

    47:31-47:33

Who did not have a shower yet today?

    47:33-47:34

Because here's what I'm gonna do.

    47:34-47:39

I'm going to come to your seat, and I'm going to hose you down.

    47:40-47:41

    Are you ready?

    47:42-47:49

Now this thing is, confession time, I got this at Ollie's for a nickel.

    47:50-47:51

Have you ever been to Ollie's?

    47:53-47:55

    No, just me and Aaron?

    47:55-47:58

Okay, that's all right, you need to go.

    47:58-48:03

This was the only one they had, and seriously, it might not have cost a nickel, but it wasn't much more than that.

    48:04-48:05

    This thing's amazing.

    48:06-48:08

It has all these little pictures on it.

    48:08-48:13

And when you turn the dial, it shoots water at you in different ways.

    48:14-48:16

Like this one is just like a big drop.

    48:16-48:18

I don't know if I've ever used that setting.

    48:18-48:20

But this second one is the one that I use.

    48:20-48:21

It's sort of the spread out.

    48:23-48:26

And this is the massage one.

    48:26-48:28

    It's like-- Right?

    48:29-48:31

And this was like the hard massage one.

    48:31-48:37

It's like-- And this is like wide spray with massage in the middle.

    48:37-48:42

So it's like, and then this is another like spread one here.

    48:43-48:47

    This thing is designed amazingly.

    48:49-48:50

    So who needs a shower?

    48:55-48:58

You're like, well, Pastor Jeff, that's not gonna work.

    49:00-49:00

    Why not?

    49:03-49:05

But what are you talking about?

    49:05-49:11

I've seen water come out of this thing every day for the last few years that I've had this one.

    49:12-49:13

Actually, we've only had this one for a year, right?

    49:14-49:16

So we've had this one for about a year.

    49:16-49:18

I've seen water come out of this thing every day.

    49:19-49:21

Why are you telling me water's not going to come out of it today?

    49:23-49:24

    Because it's not connected.

    49:26-49:27

    You understand that?

    49:28-49:38

As great as this thing is, And as beautifully as this thing has been constructed to fulfill a purpose, this thing is nothing without what?

    49:40-49:41

    A water source.

    49:42-50:05

And so many Christians act like this to say, "Look, I'm well-designed, I'm shiny, I'm useful." John 15, five, "I am the vine, you are the branches.

    50:05-50:20

Apart from me, you can do nothing." And that's why the text says, underline this, "Fill with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ." Christians, do you want God to do something through you?

    50:22-50:23

You gotta be connected to the source, man.

    50:24-50:26

You've gotta be connected to the source.

    50:27-50:28

    Otherwise, you're useless.

    50:29-50:32

as useless as trying to get a shower from this thing this morning.

    50:36-50:37

    End game is glory.

    50:38-50:39

    That's the end game.

    50:41-50:42

To the glory and praise of God.

    50:44-50:46

God glorified and praised because of his church.

    50:47-50:48

So as we close, you know what?

    50:49-51:09

I love the church because God uses it to help me grow in love, using knowledge and discernment, to help me grow in making the best choices so I'm not a hypocrite, which God uses so he can be doing his work through me so he is glorified.

    51:11-51:16

Some people have learned to hate the church, whether it's through the church's faults.

    51:20-51:30

You know, maybe the church has disgraced the name of Christ and the church hasn't properly represented what Christ called the church to be.

    51:30-51:39

Maybe that's why some people have learned to hate the church or maybe some people have learned to hate the church through their own fault, wrong expectations, unrepentant sin.

    51:42-51:44

Some have learned to hate the church.

    51:45-51:48

Some have learned to think of the church as an optional activity.

    51:49-51:51

I might see you next month, I might not, we'll see.

    51:53-51:57

But can we like Paul say, I love the church?

    51:57-51:57

    Can you say that?

    51:58-51:58

    Go ahead.

    52:00-52:01

    I love the church.

    52:02-52:02

    Say it again.

    52:03-52:04

    I love the church.

    52:06-52:08

This is where I partner with God for an eternal work.

    52:09-52:12

This is where I am picked up when the world kicks me down.

    52:14-52:16

And this is where I grow in the Lord.

    52:19-52:25

You know, you wanna know one more reason why you should love the church?

    52:28-52:30

    is because Jesus does.

    52:33-52:36

And in just a moment we're going to be receiving the Lord's Supper.

    52:40-53:06

You know, in Ephesians chapter 5, the Apostle Paul was giving instructions for husbands and wives, and he said, "Wives submit to your husbands." But then he said, "Husbands, love your wives as what?" Christ loved the church.

    53:09-53:10

How did Christ love the church?

    53:12-53:14

How did Christ love the church?

    53:17-53:26

Christ loved the church by submitting himself to death on a cross.

    53:27-53:32

And he's called us to do this to remember him.

    53:35-53:40

Not just so we don't lose the memory of a man named Jesus.

    53:41-53:42

    That's not what that means.

    53:42-53:50

It's to intentionally focus on who he is and focus on what he's done.

    53:53-53:58

So in just a moment, our ushers are going to be passing out the elements.

    54:00-54:02

And I would ask that you would hold on to that.

    54:04-54:06

And we'll receive the Lord's Supper together.

    54:08-54:12

And just as a reminder, a lot of times parents say, well, should my children take the Lord's Supper?

    54:13-54:16

I do not encourage young children to take the Lord's Supper.

    54:16-54:18

    This is for believers, okay?

    54:19-54:26

So if your child is of age where they have confessed Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, parents, this is on you.

    54:26-54:31

If you're confident that your child is walking with the Lord, this is a decision you make as a family.

    54:31-54:41

But as a pastor and as a church, my encouragement to you would be don't let young children, and if you're not sure if your children know the Lord, don't let them take communion.

    54:42-54:45

This is a very serious thing, and we wanna treat it as such.

    54:45-55:11

So parents, I would encourage you to use this a teaching opportunity. You know, "Dad, why do we have that stuff at church?" Because this is where we remember. Proclaiming the Lord's death, Jesus Christ died. He shed His blood so that my sins could be forgiven. And He arose from the dead so that I may have eternal life.
