We are getting back to our series, "Knowing Jesus." And that's what we're going after in this church.

    01:04-01:09

Not knowing about Jesus, but knowing Jesus.

    01:11-01:21

Because Jesus said, "Eternal life is knowing God and Jesus Christ." So, that's what we're going through the Gospel of John.

    01:24-01:26

John chapter 12, are you there?

    01:28-01:41

Many years ago, when we were interviewing to be part of the Harvest Bible Chapel Church Planting Fellowship, they flew us out, they flew Aaron and I out to Chicago.

    01:42-01:46

And they put us up in a host home while we were out there for our interviews.

    01:47-02:03

I remember Aaron and I, we went down to Pittsburgh International Airport, we got on a plane and we got the rental car and they said, "You're going to stay with this host family." I think the guy, he owned a bunch of magazines that were published things about certain cities.

    02:04-02:06

Like each city had their own version of this guy's magazine.

    02:06-02:08

    He was a big shot.

    02:09-02:13

We pulled up in this, it was a pretty sweet house, huge house.

    02:13-02:16

We pull up, we're exhausted from traveling all day.

    02:16-02:17

You know how that is, right?

    02:17-02:19

I mean, it was just Chicago, but still, when you travel all day.

    02:20-02:25

And we show up and we knock on the door and there was no answer.

    02:26-02:27

    There were no lights on.

    02:28-02:28

    So we knock.

    02:30-02:31

    There was no answer.

    02:31-02:31

    There were no lights on.

    02:34-02:35

We didn't know what to do.

    02:36-02:40

So we parked our little rental car in the parking lot of a movie theater.

    02:41-02:42

    And we just waited.

    02:42-02:43

    And we took a nap.

    02:43-02:44

And we tried calling the people.

    02:45-02:48

and there was no answer, and we just hung out.

    02:50-02:57

And finally, much, much, much later, we tried calling again for the umpteenth time, and they answered the phone.

    02:58-03:02

We're like, yeah, Jeff and Aaron Miller, we're supposed to be staying with you guys this week.

    03:03-03:05

    Oh, yeah, we forgot.

    03:06-03:12

Yeah, yeah, Caitlin had a dance recital, and we went to that, and we completely forgot.

    03:14-03:16

Awesome. All right, we're heading there now.

    03:16-03:25

So we show up at their house and they let us in and they're like, "Oh, you're going to be staying in this room here." They show us to this room we're staying, and they just left us there.

    03:25-03:28

After a while, Aaron's like, "I am so thirsty.

    03:28-03:38

Can you get me something to drink?" I went downstairs where the husband and the wife were down there, and the kids, they had teenage kids, were just hanging out.

    03:40-03:42

I said, "Hey, my wife's really thirsty.

    03:42-03:45

can we get a glass of water?

    03:45-03:47

And the wife was like, oh, sure.

    03:47-03:50

And she opens up the cabinet and pulls out a glass.

    03:50-03:51

    And her husband goes, no!

    03:52-03:58

And we were all just like, that was quite the overreaction, sir.

    03:58-03:59

    He goes, no!

    04:00-04:01

    Give her a plastic cup!

    04:05-04:09

And the look on this man's wife's face was just like, what the heck's going on here?

    04:10-04:11

    She's like, OK.

    04:11-04:28

And he goes, "If she drops the glass on the floor, it's going to make a mess." And I'm like, "You realize I brought my wife and not a toddler, right?" But we had our little plastic Donald Duck cup with the water.

    04:30-04:35

And it was not as much fun as I'm making it sound.

    04:36-04:41

But I'll tell you, the best part was the following morning, the best part was when we got to to watch them eat breakfast.

    04:42-04:56

Yeah, we went downstairs and sat at the table while everybody was sort of getting their own food, and we're just sitting there trying to be gracious guests, and nobody offered us anything.

    04:58-04:59

    And I was so hungry.

    05:01-05:07

And I dare not try to fill my tummy with a glass of water, but I was so hungry.

    05:07-05:12

There was a jar of Nutella sitting there.

    05:13-05:19

And I said, "Oh, Nutella!" I said, "I've always wanted to try that." Hint, hint.

    05:20-05:25

"I've always wanted to try Nutella." And the guy said, "Oh, it's delicious." And just kept on going.

    05:28-05:34

"I'd like to try some of your Nutella." Anyways, I could go on and on.

    05:36-05:37

    but I'm not going to.

    05:41-05:48

But Erin and I left this house with a lot of questions, and to this day she's convinced that was part of the application process.

    05:49-05:53

They're like, let's see how much they'll endure before they run out, and we're like, we're staying!

    05:57-06:33

We left with a lot of questions, but there's one question that we didn't have, and that was, how did those people feel about us. Were we highly valued guests to them? Not so much. We were a little more than an annoyance it felt like. And that takes us to our passage today. We left off in chapter 11 when we were in John. Lazarus was raised from the dead and the Jewish council got together And they're like, "This is the last straw.

    06:34-06:37

Jesus has to die. Get the Word out.

    06:37-06:45

We can't have Him running around resurrecting dead people." So, Word's out. They're after Jesus now.

    06:45-06:46

Like, final straw, this is it.

    06:47-06:53

And when we get to chapter 12, we see that Jesus is heading back to Jerusalem.

    06:53-06:54

    Like, didn't you know?

    06:56-06:56

    He knew.

    06:59-07:00

And he knew that his time was coming.

    07:02-07:04

Which is why he headed towards Jerusalem.

    07:08-07:11

But as we look at this passage today, we're going to see there are two kinds of people.

    07:12-07:13

You hear that a lot, right?

    07:13-07:14

There are two kinds of people in the world.

    07:14-07:18

But when it comes to Jesus, that's always absolutely, certainly true.

    07:19-07:21

But there are two kinds of people in the world.

    07:22-07:30

There are those who believe in Jesus Christ and love Him, And there are those who do not believe in Jesus Christ, hate Him.

    07:31-07:40

Whether that hatred is outwardly expressed or it's inwardly kept, they don't want anything to do with Jesus.

    07:42-07:48

We're going to get even more specific today as we look at this passage, because you're going to see this so clear in God's Word.

    07:49-07:51

There are really two kinds of people in the world.

    07:52-07:54

There are people that recognize Jesus' worth.

    07:55-07:58

And there are people that do not recognize Jesus' worth.

    08:01-08:21

There are people that say, "Jesus is everything to me." And there are people that would say, "Jesus isn't even worth giving Him a glass of water with a glass." and they have such little esteem for Him.

    08:25-08:26

    Recognizing Jesus' worth.

    08:28-08:34

And we're going to hit this hard because this is what determines whether or not somebody will receive Jesus Christ.

    08:34-08:38

What is it? What is it that makes somebody receive Jesus?

    08:38-08:39

    It's this.

    08:39-08:41

It's when they recognize His worth.

    08:43-08:46

Jesus talked about this in two little parables.

    08:46-08:47

    Matthew 13.

    08:47-08:53

He said the King of Heaven is like a guy He sold everything he had to buy the field to get the treasure.

    08:54-08:57

He said that's the Kingdom of Heaven. That's Him.

    08:58-08:58

    He's worth everything.

    08:59-09:06

He said the Kingdom of Heaven is like this guy that was selling pearls, and he saw the greatest pearl of all time, and he sold everything he had to buy that one pearl.

    09:07-09:08

    That's Him.

    09:10-09:15

And Jesus, in those parables, and you're going to see it in His passage, it all boils down to this.

    09:15-09:17

    You recognize His value.

    09:20-09:29

Because when you do, you'll give or do anything for Jesus Christ.

    09:31-09:37

You might be sitting here right now going, never really thought about it that way.

    09:37-09:38

    Do I value Jesus?

    09:38-09:41

Well, here's the thing, I can't answer that for you.

    09:42-09:43

    I can't see your heart.

    09:46-09:48

I can only see your actions.

    09:51-09:57

And it's really hard for you to evaluate your own heart because the Bible says that your heart is deceitful, above all things.

    09:59-10:06

So what I want you to see very clearly in this text is what you really think of Jesus always shows up in your actions.

    10:06-10:06

    Right?

    10:07-10:13

You're like, "Do I value Jesus?" always shows up in your actions if you do or not.

    10:14-10:17

And it's just so clearly on display here.

    10:17-10:27

So in your outline, if you're taking notes, "Knowing His value when your actions reveal your heart." Very simple outline today.

    10:27-10:31

First of all, we're going to see three marks that Jesus is highly valued by you.

    10:33-10:36

Then we're going to see three marks that Jesus has no value to you.

    10:37-10:39

So let's get to the first one.

    10:39-10:44

"Jesus is highly valued by you." Verses 1-3, let's take a look.

    10:44-10:54

It says, "Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.

    10:55-10:57

So they gave a dinner for him there.

    10:57-11:02

Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at the table.

    11:04-11:14

Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment from pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair.

    11:14-11:21

The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume." Stop right there.

    11:22-11:29

In just those couple of verses, we see three things, three marks that Jesus is valued by you.

    11:29-11:34

You do these things, these are indicators that Jesus is highly valued by you.

    11:36-11:41

"Hey, jot this down, you serve Him." Like how do I know Jesus means something to me?

    11:41-11:42

    You serve Him.

    11:44-11:48

Like Martha, valuing Jesus makes you want to serve Him.

    11:49-11:57

And you see serving Jesus in His church as a way of expressing your love for Him, as a way of demonstrating His worth to you.

    11:58-12:15

Whether it's leading a small group or teaching and harvest kids, leading worship, putting out the signs, working security, greeting people at the door, Whatever God has called you to do, I'm doing this because of how much Jesus means to me.

    12:16-12:17

    That's my motivation.

    12:19-12:20

    It's not out of compulsion.

    12:23-12:25

And it's not out of obligation.

    12:29-12:35

It's an attitude like Martha that says Jesus is worth anything and everything and what I can do for him.

    12:38-12:40

Knowing his worth makes you want to serve him.

    12:40-12:41

That's just the way it is.

    12:42-12:44

Some of you know my missionary friend Barnabas in Thailand.

    12:45-12:55

When I was over there the one time, he took me to the border of Thailand and Burma, and he was showing me where the boundaries were.

    12:59-13:30

As a matter of fact as anything, he said, "Yes, I found up there, drive your truck for several hours and then the roads are too bad to drive so you're gonna walk for a couple of days after that he goes I find a tribe up there that nobody had ever found before like they were kind of isolated and he said I found them up there and he said I took them I took them fish and I'm like hang on when he said that I was like like Long John Silvers right you took and I took them fish.

    13:31-13:36

And then I was thinking, "Well, Barnabas, how did you keep the fish from going bad?

    13:37-13:39

It took you days to walk there.

    13:39-13:43

How did you keep the fish from going bad?" And he looked confused for a second.

    13:44-13:50

He goes, "No, no, no, no. Live fish." Then he was going on with his story.

    13:50-14:16

I'm like, "No, no, no, no, stop. Stop." "How did you take live fish?" He said, "Well, they..." Again, matter of fact, he said, "Well, they were putting a pond in their village, and they wanted fish, so I took them fish." I'm like, "Live fish?" He says, "Yes, I took them live fish." And it's just not registering to me.

    14:16-14:22

I'm like, "How did you do that?" And he looked at me like, "Dude, how stupid...

    14:22-14:52

Are you Americans?" He says, "I put them in bags with water." I'm like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa." I'm like, "All right, so you're telling me that you walked for several days carrying an aquarium." And he's like, "Well, they said they needed fish." And I walked away from that going, I am the lamest servant of Jesus ever.

    14:55-14:58

Like, what would compel a man to do something like that?

    14:59-15:02

Unless you're on some kind of a reality TV show or something.

    15:02-15:03

    But he wasn't.

    15:03-15:05

What would compel somebody to do that?

    15:06-15:13

He told me one time, the thing that motivates him, 1 Corinthians 9.23, "I do all things for the sake of the gospel." That's his thing.

    15:14-15:18

In other words, Jesus is worth anything I do for Him.

    15:19-15:20

    That drives me.

    15:23-15:29

And according to Jesus, by the way, greatness in the kingdom is serving.

    15:31-15:34

We tend to evaluate greatness based on who gets served.

    15:35-15:41

"That guy's got a lot of servants, a lot of butlers and maids and people working for him." That's how we evaluate greatness.

    15:41-15:46

But Jesus evaluates greatness based on how you serve.

    15:47-15:51

I'm going to say a lot more about that, but we're going to be hitting that pretty hard in chapter 13.

    15:53-15:55

But that's a mark that Jesus is valued by you.

    15:55-15:55

    You serve Him.

    15:56-16:09

Anything that I can do in the name of Jesus, for Jesus, because of Jesus, you don't have to ask me, even if it's carrying an aquarium through the mountain jungles of Thailand.

    16:11-16:18

Letter B, "You desire His presence." We saw what Martha was doing.

    16:18-16:19

    Did you see verse 2?

    16:19-16:27

It says, "Lazarus was one of those reclining with Him at the table." And you can't just dismiss this as a passing statement.

    16:30-16:34

It's pretty significant when you consider that Jesus is now a wanted man.

    16:35-16:38

It would have been real easy for Lazarus to say, "Hey, I already died once.

    16:41-16:42

I'm going to keep it safe.

    16:43-16:44

Right? I'm going to keep it safe.

    16:46-16:48

But Lazarus was more concerned with fellowship.

    16:49-16:53

I know it's not safe to be near Jesus right now, but that's where I need to be.

    16:54-16:55

And I'm going to be with Him.

    16:56-16:57

    Fellowship.

    16:58-17:00

Lazarus just wanted to be in Jesus' presence.

    17:00-17:03

And that's true of everyone who receives life from Jesus.

    17:03-17:04

We just want to be with Him.

    17:05-17:08

In His Word, in prayer, with His people.

    17:08-17:12

There's no place I'd rather be in the presence of Jesus Christ.

    17:14-17:19

Every minute I spend with Him is worth it because He is worth everything to me.

    17:19-17:20

    And that's another mark.

    17:21-17:23

That Jesus has value to you.

    17:24-17:26

Not a hard sell on Valentine's Day, right?

    17:26-17:29

When you love and value someone, you want to spend time with them.

    17:31-17:34

And I think that certainly applies more to Jesus Christ than anyone.

    17:36-17:37

    You desire His presence.

    17:38-17:40

    you sacrifice for Him.

    17:42-17:43

    You sacrifice for Him.

    17:44-17:45

Let's talk about Mary for a second.

    17:47-17:52

Again, this would be real easy to just sort of read through quickly and gloss over.

    17:52-18:17

It says, "She took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and ointed Jesus' feet, wiped His feet with her hair, and it was potent, it filled the house with the perfume." "Mother Mark, that Jesus is highly valued by you as you sacrifice for Him." Mary was actively expressing her heart by anointing Jesus.

    18:20-18:21

We're going to find out here in a second.

    18:22-18:27

This ointment was worth a year's wage for a laborer.

    18:28-18:30

How much does a laborer make in a year?

    18:32-18:33

    Forty, fifty thousand dollars?

    18:33-18:34

    Is that a conservative number?

    18:35-18:36

    Does that make sense?

    18:36-18:38

Okay, I see some people shaking their head, yes.

    18:39-18:41

Okay, just to give us sort of a frame of reference.

    18:42-18:44

She had a $50,000 bottle of perfume.

    18:46-18:53

And she says, "Here, Jesus, this is for you." And according to Matthew and Mark, it started at his head and went down to his feet.

    18:54-19:01

And she's like, "This is for Jesus." She dropped a $50,000 bottle of perfume on Jesus.

    19:04-19:12

This was the kind of stuff that was usually used for burial, but it had a prophetic significance.

    19:12-19:16

We're going to see she was anointing Jesus' body for burial.

    19:17-19:18

You'll see that here in a second.

    19:19-19:35

Like what in the world would possess a woman to spend a $50,000 bottle of perfume on Jesus Christ.

    19:36-19:41

Well, you know, in those days, foot washing was an act of hospitality.

    19:43-19:46

But this obviously goes way further than hospitality, right?

    19:47-20:12

This goes way further than "can I take your coat?" For Jesus' love, for His teaching, for raising her brother from the dead, she's like, "I'm worshiping, and I'm lavishly worshiping, and I am - and you've got to catch this - I'm sparing no expense." What's the price limit on your worship?

    20:13-20:17

For Mary, there was no hesitation and there was no regret.

    20:19-20:31

I don't see Mary with that bottle of ointment thinking about anointing Jesus going, "Is he worth it?" I don't know.

    20:33-20:35

    We don't see the hesitation.

    20:35-20:37

And we don't see the regret either.

    20:37-20:47

We don't see Mary leaving supper going, "What is it that I've done?" Because love doesn't care about expense.

    20:50-20:51

    Love doesn't care about expense.

    20:52-21:12

We're talking about our love for Jesus Christ, wives, so don't use this as some kind of Valentine's Day hammer to say, "Pastor Jeff said love doesn't care about expense, therefore..." But when it comes to worshiping Jesus, when it comes to valuing Jesus Christ, you will never regret sacrificing anything for Him.

    21:14-21:16

    You will never regret that.

    21:19-21:19

    I'm trying to tell you.

    21:22-21:37

It was hard when I was putting this outline together, I was trying to think of a different word for sacrifice, because when I talk about the way we show love to Jesus, I don't like using the word "sacrifice." Because He sacrificed for me.

    21:37-21:40

And it almost feels like I'm comparing our sacrifices.

    21:40-21:49

Like, "Jesus sacrificed for me." I'm like, "Well, I'm sacrificing for you, Jesus." "Really?" Everything I am, everything that I have, Everything that I ever will have comes from Jesus.

    21:49-21:51

He gave everything to purchase my salvation.

    21:52-21:53

    We're going to compare sacrifices?

    21:53-21:55

I just couldn't think of a better word.

    21:57-22:07

But anything that people consider valuable that you give up for Jesus as Mary did this perfume, you will never regret that.

    22:10-22:11

    Weekly giving?

    22:13-22:16

You will never regret weekly giving.

    22:17-22:25

If you feel that God has called you to sell something that you own of value in order to support missions, do it.

    22:27-22:40

And I promise you, if this is motivated by recognizing Jesus' worth and showing love for Him the way Mary showed love for Jesus, you will not regret that.

    22:42-22:49

He's getting a bonus from work and saying, "I'm donating this for kingdom purposes." You will not regret that.

    22:52-22:53

    Because He's worth it.

    22:54-22:55

    He's worth it.

    22:58-23:01

And really, all of this is worship in various forms, right?

    23:01-23:03

There's no pep talk, there's no coercion.

    23:04-23:07

They didn't need a guilt trip, they didn't need begged to do what they did.

    23:09-23:22

For Martha, for Lazarus, for Mary, I said, "Hey, Jesus is worth all my service, all time spent with Him, anything I sacrifice to worship Him, Jesus is worth it." It was just joyful worship.

    23:25-23:36

If any of those things resonate with you, like, "Yeah, I see these things in my life!" That's a great indicator that you value Jesus Christ.

    23:39-23:43

On the other hand, First remark is that Jesus is not valued by you.

    23:43-23:44

Again, it's right in the text.

    23:45-23:46

    Look at v. 4.

    23:47-23:54

It says, "But Judas Iscariot..." See the shift there?

    23:55-23:55

    The first three verses.

    23:56-23:58

It's like worship. Jesus is awesome.

    23:58-23:59

    I'm going to give everything.

    23:59-24:00

    I'm going to do everything.

    24:01-24:04

It's like, "But Judas..." Wah, wah.

    24:05-24:07

Like, we're taking a turn here.

    24:08-24:31

It says, "But Judas Iscariot..." of the disciples, he who was about to betray him, said, "Why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?" He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and having charge of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

    24:32-24:57

Jesus said, "Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial." "For the poor you will always have with you, but you do not always have Me." When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came not only on account of Him, but also to see Lazarus whom He had raised from the dead.

    24:57-25:05

So the chief priest made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, because on account of him, many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus.

    25:09-25:12

Okay, so maybe you don't value Jesus.

    25:12-25:16

And here are three very clear signs.

    25:17-25:25

If you can take an honest assessment of yourself, if this is you, maybe you don't value Jesus like you think you do.

    25:28-25:30

Letter A, you're quick to criticize.

    25:33-25:59

to criticize. Here comes the bucket of water on the fire of worship. Mary, worshiping Jesus as lavishly as she could, and Judas is standing there going, "What a waste. What a waste." Just criticizing. You know, like David's wife in 2 Samuel 6.

    25:59-26:07

Remember, David was dressed down, he was dancing, with all his might before the Lord as he worshiped, and David's wife scolded him.

    26:09-26:10

She said, "You're supposed to be the king.

    26:10-26:20

You don't act like that!" And I've got to tell you, David's wife, Michal, and Judas Iscariot, they're sitting in churches everywhere this morning.

    26:22-26:29

The passionate worship is happening, instead of participating, they criticize.

    26:33-26:34

    Worship was too long.

    26:36-26:37

    The sermon wasn't that great.

    26:39-26:40

    The coffee was terrible.

    26:41-26:47

I don't like that little system they have to check your kids in, and the kids thing, and you get your little sticker.

    26:47-26:48

    I don't like that.

    26:51-26:57

When I hear those things, they sort of translate in my head.

    26:58-27:05

Because what you're actually saying is, I'm not here to value Jesus, I'm here to offer my expert analysis.

    27:08-27:11

And I need to remind you that criticism is not a spiritual gift.

    27:13-27:15

    In fact, it's the opposite.

    27:16-27:52

If you can come in God's presence with God's people and worship and get in the Word and pray scholarship, and your big takeaway is criticism? That says a lot about your heart. You're quick to criticize. Letter B, mark that Jesus is not valued by you. You are fixed more on getting than giving. You're fixed more on getting than giving. Did you see in the text that And John lets us in on this little secret.

    27:54-27:58

None of us were really shocked when we read it, but John lets us in just to clarify.

    27:59-28:04

He's like, "Judas didn't really care about poor people." Are you shocked?

    28:05-28:06

Does that shock you, boys and girls?

    28:10-28:20

Judas was like, "This could have been given to the poor!" And John's like, "He didn't care about the poor at all." He cared about money.

    28:21-28:25

And in Judas' mind, what he was seeing, think of it from Judas' perspective.

    28:25-28:29

When he saw Mary anointing Jesus, do you know what he saw?

    28:30-28:33

He saw just buckets of cash going down the toilet.

    28:33-28:34

    That's what he saw.

    28:35-28:36

    Oh, what a waste!

    28:36-28:38

Oh, oh, oh, the whole thing!

    28:38-28:39

    Oh, the whole thing!

    28:39-28:41

    Oh, this is horrible!

    28:41-28:43

I can't believe somebody would do that!

    28:43-28:44

    Oh, come on!

    28:46-28:46

    What a waste!

    28:50-28:52

John says he was a thief.

    28:53-28:53

    Judas was a thief.

    28:54-28:56

I was thinking about that a lot this week.

    28:58-29:05

I'm sure that Judas justified his thieving in his mind.

    29:05-29:06

    I'm sure that he did.

    29:08-29:25

I don't think that Judas was off in a corner like Dr. Doom's snidely whiplash going, is going to be my plan to get rich." I think Judas was following Jesus, and I think eventually Judas got to the place, like all thieves, he justified it.

    29:26-29:28

He goes, "You know, I left everything to follow Jesus.

    29:28-29:30

    I deserve something." Right?

    29:31-29:34

"I could have been making buckoo bucks back home.

    29:36-29:37

    I deserve something.

    29:39-29:44

I mean, they gave me the job of being the team accountant.

    29:44-29:46

I mean, shouldn't I get paid for that?

    29:46-29:48

Don't you think I deserve some compensation for being the accountant?

    29:48-29:50

I mean, other accountants get paid.

    29:50-29:51

    Why shouldn't I get paid?

    29:51-29:53

You know what, if they're not going to do it, I'll just pay myself.

    29:53-29:55

    I'm sure it was justified.

    29:58-30:06

You're like, "Dude, how could he do that?" And I would say, "Oh, it still happens." It still happens.

    30:07-30:14

There's too many people looking at the church as a place to get, not a place to give.

    30:15-30:16

    And that's a problem.

    30:20-30:25

I knew of a pastor way up north who would join the offering counter.

    30:25-30:27

You know, the people who would take the offering and count it?

    30:28-30:32

And if there was any cash whatsoever, the pastor would take it and put it in his pocket.

    30:32-30:53

He said, "That's for me. Cash is for me." You can deposit the checks, and the cash is for me." You've heard stories of ministry leaders on the news, even very local, that use church funds for personal use, and they call it "misappropriating funds." Do you know what the Bible calls that?

    30:54-30:55

    Being a thief!

    30:58-31:01

And you're like, well, shame on those people that would do something like that.

    31:01-31:02

    Shame on them.

    31:03-31:05

I would say yes, but hang on a second.

    31:06-31:14

you don't have to be pocketing cash or misusing the company credit card in order to have a Judas heart.

    31:16-31:23

All you need is the attitude of looking to get from the church instead of giving to the church.

    31:23-31:24

    That's all you need.

    31:25-31:26

    You've got a Judas heart.

    31:29-31:37

And you whine about, "Well, the church should be doing something for me." The church should be giving me what I want.

    31:37-31:39

There needs to be more programs and things for me.

    31:40-31:43

And why aren't things more to my preferences?

    31:43-31:45

Why isn't everything in that church how I like it?

    31:49-31:50

    You're not here to worship.

    31:52-31:53

    You're here for yourself.

    31:55-31:57

And I would say you're not being a Mary.

    31:58-31:58

    You're being a Judas.

    32:01-32:08

Because recognizing Jesus' value moves you to give to Him, not take from Him or His church.

    32:10-32:11

    So what's your attitude?

    32:12-32:13

You're fixed more on getting than giving?

    32:15-32:16

Maybe you don't value Jesus like you thought you did.

    32:18-32:23

Letter C, you want to remove anything associated with Jesus.

    32:27-32:29

I don't want to remove anything associated with Jesus.

    32:32-32:37

I've got to tell you, as I was reading this passage, and since Dan spoke last week, I had two weeks.

    32:38-32:40

If the sermon seems long, that's why.

    32:41-32:43

Two weeks to work on this one.

    32:45-32:49

I shouldn't have said that, because if it tangs, you're going to be like, dude, that was two weeks worth?

    32:52-33:00

But I've got to tell you, I was thinking a lot about this, and watching the news and trying to stay tuned in to all the stuff happening in the news.

    33:00-33:04

And I realized, you know what, there really is nothing new under the sun.

    33:05-33:06

There is nothing new under the sun.

    33:07-33:12

Even the latest trends that we see now happened in the Bible.

    33:12-33:16

For example, one of the big things people talk about now is virtue signaling.

    33:16-33:17

Did you see it in the passage?

    33:17-33:18

    That's what Judas was doing.

    33:19-33:20

    He was virtue signaling.

    33:21-33:22

You know what virtue signaling is?

    33:22-33:31

When you make these statements, trying to sound humble, but really your intention is to brag about how virtuous you are.

    33:33-33:40

For example, virtue signaling is when you say something like this, "I wear my mask because I care about you.

    33:40-33:51

I just love the people around me so much that that's why I wear a mask." And look, wear a mask, don't wear a mask, but that's obnoxious to announce it that way.

    33:51-33:54

    I'm such a compassionate person.

    33:55-33:57

Do you see how big my heart is?

    33:58-33:59

    That's virtue signaling.

    34:01-34:02

    And that's what Judas did.

    34:04-34:07

Judas pretended like he cared about the poor, and he sure didn't.

    34:10-34:17

Another common thing in our day that we see in this passage is trending.

    34:18-34:19

    You know what trending is?

    34:20-34:27

Something's really popular, like on the internet, social media, people are sharing, you know, whether it's a meme or a hashtag or whatever.

    34:27-34:29

    It's trending, it's very popular.

    34:29-34:32

And we see in this passage, Lazarus was trending.

    34:33-34:35

He was second only to Jesus.

    34:35-34:37

Everyone wanted to see the dead guy who resurrected.

    34:40-34:49

But I think one of the most obvious things we see in this passage that kind of struck me is cancel culture.

    34:50-34:50

    You see that?

    34:52-34:56

The chief priests were doing cancel culture 2,000 years ago.

    34:59-35:03

    They couldn't deny Lazarus' resurrection.

    35:05-35:10

I mean, they had to acknowledge that Lazarus resurrected because the dead man is walking around, so what did they do?

    35:11-35:14

Well, they put a plan together to try to destroy the evidence.

    35:15-35:17

You realize if Lazarus was alive today, you know what the plan would be.

    35:18-35:19

You're going to cancel his Twitter account.

    35:20-35:22

You're going to cancel his Facebook account.

    35:22-35:23

    Don't let him on Instagram.

    35:24-35:25

    That's what canceled culture does.

    35:25-35:29

We don't like what you represent, so we silence you.

    35:32-35:37

The first century canceled culture, because they couldn't just hit a switch and close down his Twitter.

    35:38-35:41

The first century canceled culture was, yeah, we have to kill him.

    35:45-35:48

That concept in and of itself is baffling.

    35:49-35:50

    What was Lazarus' big crime?

    35:54-35:55

    He resurrected from the dead.

    35:56-35:56

    That's what he did.

    35:57-36:05

He resurrected from the dead and these chief priests, instead of them saying, "If Jesus can raise the dead, we better take a closer look at Jesus.

    36:05-36:12

We better take a closer look at Lazarus because we're dealing with some very serious, crazy stuff here.

    36:12-36:15

If dead people are walking around, they didn't do that.

    36:15-36:16

    They said, "You know what?

    36:16-36:28

Because Jesus doesn't fit our narrative, we're going to have to not only get rid of Jesus, we're going to get rid of Lazarus too." So there's nothing new under the sun.

    36:30-36:41

When you refuse to recognize Jesus' worth, you'll want to shut out anything that brings your attention to Jesus, anything that testifies to who Jesus is.

    36:41-36:43

We've got to get rid of it. We can't have it around.

    36:44-36:47

That's why you look for excuses to avoid church.

    36:48-36:51

That's why a small group can't be an option for you.

    36:52-36:54

That's why you can't tolerate any worship music.

    36:55-37:00

You get in the car, your wife was in the car, she had the worship music on, "I've got to turn this.

    37:00-37:13

I can't stand even being exposed to this." Why? Because these things are to you What Lazarus was to the chief priests, reminders of Jesus.

    37:17-37:21

And you think, I'll just eliminate these reminders.

    37:21-37:23

And out of sight, out of mind.

    37:27-37:36

Well, if you don't want to deal with Jesus now, keep in mind that you do have an appointment to deal with Him someday.

    37:39-37:52

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we spend some time talking about our four pillars through the month of January, but something else that's distinctive about our church is our mission is to make disciples.

    37:52-37:57

And we believe that a disciple of Jesus Christ does three things.

    37:57-38:00

Worships Christ, walks with Christ, and works for Christ.

    38:00-38:02

And did you see all three of them show up in this passage?

    38:03-38:04

    Worship Christ - that's Mary.

    38:05-38:12

Walk with Christ - your fellowship with Jesus - Working for Christ? That's Martha.

    38:14-38:15

So what does Jesus mean to you?

    38:19-38:20

What does Jesus mean to you?

    38:23-38:29

I mean, I could stand up here and tell you what the Bible says Jesus is worth.

    38:30-38:31

I could tell you all that.

    38:32-38:34

He's the only begotten Son of God.

    38:36-38:38

Jesus is the heir of all things.

    38:39-38:41

Jesus is the name above all names.

    38:41-38:44

That's what the Bible says Jesus is worth.

    38:45-38:47

But today I want to ask, what's He worth to you?

    38:50-39:01

Because like Martha and Lazarus and Mary, like Judas and the chief priests, His value to you is going to show up in your condom.

    39:03-39:03

    Let's pray.

    39:04-39:22

Father in Heaven, I just simply ask that You would give us eyes to see the glory and the beauty of Jesus Christ so that we strive to value Him as we should.

    39:22-39:28

And Father, I'm not sure that it's possible that we can value Jesus as He deserves.

    39:28-39:39

I don't think we have the capacity to value someone like Jesus all His glory and sovereignty and splendor.

    39:39-39:47

I don't think we have the capacity to sort of max out our value.

    39:50-39:51

And maybe that's why heaven is eternal.

    39:53-40:05

Because we'll have all of eternity to continue to know, understand, and worship Jesus as He deserves.

    40:07-40:08

    God, show us.

    40:10-40:15

Show us, Father, the worth of Jesus Christ.

    40:15-40:17

Show us that He is the treasure hidden in the field.

    40:17-40:20

Show us that He is the pearl of great price, Father.

    40:20-40:24

And let us esteem Him as that.

    40:24-40:37

And Father, let our conduct reflect the conduct of people who recognize the worth of Jesus Christ.

    40:39-40:44

In His glorious and incomparable name, Father, we pray these things to You.

    40:45-40:45

    Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 12:1-11

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. If Jesus knew Judas was a thief (John 12:6, and see John 2:24-25), why did Jesus allow Judas to be the treasurer and steal from their funds?

  3. Explain Jesus’ statement in John 12:8. What was He saying about worship? What was He saying about taking care of the poor?

  4. Why did the chief priests want to kill Lazarus (John 12:10)? How is this like “cancel culture” in our day?

  5. How would you show an unbeliever Jesus’ worth?

Pray for one another to demonstrate how you value Jesus, as Martha, Lazarus, and Mary did.

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Providence.

Introduction:

God@Work Results In 3 Different Reactions (John 11:45-57):

  1. Those that Obey Jesus. (John 11:45)

(Luke 9:35) - And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!"

    See: Acts 2:38 | Acts 3:19 | Acts 17:30 | Romans 1:5

  1. Those that Oppose Jesus (John 11:46-54).

Isaiah 53:6 - ...the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  2. Those that Observe Jesus (John 11:55-57).

Luke 11:23 - Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

John chapter 11, this is going to be our last message in John for a while.

    00:52-00:56

And it is an extremely appropriate place to stop.

    00:57-01:00

We'll see why as we go through God's Word together.

    01:01-01:14

As you're turning there, a couple of years ago, we were having our immediate family's Christmas and the boys were opening their presents and Cade got this box.

    01:14-01:19

He's in Harvest Kids today, so you're going to have to get on his case about this later.

    01:19-01:24

But he opened up this box and it was a laptop computer.

    01:24-01:26

It was his big gift of the year.

    01:27-01:28

    And this was his reaction.

    01:29-01:34

He took the paper off and he goes, "A laptop computer." And set it aside.

    01:35-01:48

I'm like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!" I said, "There's actually a computer in that box!" He goes, "Oh, okay." And Aaron and I looked at each other from across the room like that was not the reaction that we were expecting.

    01:48-01:53

So fast forward about, I don't know, five or seven minutes.

    01:54-01:59

He's opening up another present, It was a big bag of Sour Patch Kids.

    01:59-02:01

    He lost his mind!

    02:02-02:03

    Sour Patch Kids!

    02:03-02:06

He ran over and jumped on Aaron and gave her a hug.

    02:06-02:08

    I love you guys!

    02:08-02:11

Then he ran across to the other end of the living room and jumped on me.

    02:11-02:14

He goes, thank you, you guys are the best parents ever!

    02:14-02:21

And I looked at Aaron again and we thought, that's not the reaction that we were expecting.

    02:22-02:23

    Aaron and I talked afterwards.

    02:24-02:26

We could have saved a lot of money that Christmas.

    02:27-02:31

Not the reaction we were expecting.

    02:32-02:38

And as we're in John chapter 11, Jesus just performed his greatest public miracle.

    02:39-02:40

    Remember the story?

    02:41-02:53

Here's a man dead, buried in the tomb, stone rolled over, four days in the tomb, Jesus shows up, move the stone, Lazarus, come forth!

    02:53-02:58

And the dead man comes walking out of the grave.

    02:59-03:04

So my question, church, is what kind of a reaction would you expect from that?

    03:05-03:06

I mean, just think about it.

    03:06-03:16

Think of a funeral that you attended where the person was laying there dead, and imagine some person walks in and says, "Hey, get up." And the dead person gets up.

    03:16-03:18

I mean, what kind of a reaction would you expect?

    03:19-03:22

    I would expect mass revival.

    03:23-03:28

Everybody on their knees, on their face, "I can't believe what I just saw!

    03:28-03:35

Here is a man who can reverse man's greatest problem, which is death!" Well, some people believed.

    03:36-03:37

    Which isn't surprising.

    03:37-03:43

But what is surprising is the reaction that some people had to the resurrection of Lazarus.

    03:44-03:46

    The reaction to Jesus.

    03:46-03:49

There are some people that said, "He resurrected a man?

    03:50-03:53

Well, then we have to kill him." But let's not get ahead of ourselves.

    03:53-03:57

We're going to see this in the passage today, just very simply on your outline.

    03:58-04:01

This is the aftermath of Lazarus' resurrection.

    04:02-04:03

I've got this down on your outline today.

    04:03-04:06

God at work results in three different reactions.

    04:07-04:08

This is just the way it is.

    04:08-04:12

When God is at work, there are three different reactions that take place.

    04:12-04:16

And the first one is number one, those that obey Jesus.

    04:16-04:19

There are those that obey Jesus.

    04:20-04:22

Look at verse 45, John chapter 11.

    04:22-04:30

It says, "Many of the Jews, therefore, who had come with Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him." Stop there.

    04:30-04:37

These were the Jews that were at the funeral and they were also there at what I think we can call the reverse funeral.

    04:38-04:43

They saw Jesus' miracle and they came to believe in who He is.

    04:43-04:51

And I would say that after watching Lazarus resurrect from the dead, believing in Jesus just seems like a logical response, right?

    04:52-04:56

I mean, the appropriate response, the emotional response.

    04:56-05:11

But I want to remind you today, whether you're sitting here, you're watching this online, you're watching the recording later or whatever, I need to remind you that believing in Jesus Christ, receiving Jesus Christ, repenting from your sin, all the same event.

    05:12-05:18

Believing in Jesus is a command, and commands are meant to be obeyed.

    05:18-05:28

Here's what I mean. Oftentimes when we preach, or when we evangelize, or when we witness, or whatever you want to refer to that, we talk about sharing our faith, right?

    05:29-05:31

That's how we describe it, we're sharing our faith.

    05:31-05:34

And it is sharing our faith.

    05:34-05:43

But you know something we don't often talk about is the truth that the gospel of Jesus Christ commands people to believe.

    05:44-05:46

In other words, the gospel is not just sharing something.

    05:47-05:55

If you really take a hard look at your Bible, proclaiming the gospel is reiterating a command from God.

    05:55-05:56

    You understand that?

    05:57-06:01

The gospel is not just, "Hey, I have this suggestion for you.

    06:02-06:06

If your thing's not working, why don't you give Jesus a try?

    06:07-06:08

    That's not the gospel.

    06:09-06:12

The gospel is at its very base, it's a command.

    06:13-06:16

You are lost in your sin and you are commanded to believe.

    06:17-06:22

You're like, "Jeff, can you back that up?" Well, here's a few verses. Let's look at Luke 9.35.

    06:23-06:24

It'll be on the screen here for you.

    06:24-06:28

This is the Lord speaking at the transfiguration of Jesus Christ.

    06:28-06:35

It says, "And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my Son, my Chosen One, listen to Him." That's a command.

    06:35-06:43

"Hey, listen to what He's saying." Acts 2.38, "Peter said to the crowd..." This is a command.

    06:43-06:49

"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ." Again, turn to page... Acts 3.19.

    06:50-06:57

Again, Peter says, "Repent therefore and turn back that your sins may be blotted out." Believing is a command.

    06:58-07:01

Acts 17.30, in case it's still fuzzy for you.

    07:02-07:14

It says, "The times of ignorance God overlooked." Meaning the past times, God overlooked that, but now He commands all people everywhere to repent.

    07:14-07:16

Do you see that? It's a command.

    07:17-07:20

God doesn't suggest. He does what?

    07:21-07:23

Say it, come on, what does He do?

    07:23-07:26

    He commands all people.

    07:26-07:27

    Who? All people!

    07:28-07:30

    Like, what people? People everywhere!

    07:30-07:32

    To repent, it's a command.

    07:32-07:38

In Romans 1-5, Paul talks about the obedience of faith.

    07:38-07:40

I could go on and on, but we're going to stop there.

    07:41-07:46

I just want to remind us that believing in Jesus Christ is a command to be obeyed.

    07:46-07:47

    It's a command.

    07:48-07:59

If you need to think of the gospel not as God saying, "Hey, I have a suggestion for you, possibly would you please consider?" You need to think of the gospel as God speaking this way.

    08:00-08:06

God is saying, "Hey, the path that you are on is dishonoring me, and it is destroying you.

    08:07-08:10

I made a new path for you by the blood of my Son.

    08:11-08:13

Get on the path." That's the gospel.

    08:14-08:17

So church, I'm not asking you, I'm telling you.

    08:18-08:24

Believe in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin, for the promise of eternal life.

    08:24-08:31

And there were people in this crowd when Jesus resurrected Lazarus, there were people totally on board with that, but not everyone.

    08:31-08:33

There were those that obeyed Jesus.

    08:33-08:35

Let's look at the second group here.

    08:35-08:37

There are those that opposed Jesus.

    08:38-08:39

    Look at verse 46.

    08:39-08:44

It says, "But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

    08:44-08:51

So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered the council and said, 'What are we to do, for this man performs many signs?

    08:51-08:58

If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.

    08:58-08:59

    Let's stop there.

    08:59-09:11

Some people, according to this, wrap your brain around this with me because it's hard, some people watched Lazarus walk out of his tomb, and their reaction was they ran to the Pharisees to tell them. Why?

    09:14-09:15

    Help me out, young people.

    09:15-09:23

What's the term for people that get on social media and make a comment just for the sake of igniting people, getting people fired up.

    09:23-09:24

    What's that called?

    09:25-09:25

    Trolling?

    09:26-09:26

    Okay.

    09:27-09:29

    First century trolls right here.

    09:30-09:30

    That's what they were doing.

    09:31-09:31

    They were trolling.

    09:32-09:36

And I've got to be honest with you, I have a hard time conceptualizing this.

    09:37-09:41

They watched a man walk out of the tomb, and they said, "You know what we should do?

    09:41-09:50

We should tell the Pharisees because they are going to be so ticked off when they hear about this." But that's exactly what happened.

    09:50-09:52

    They knew. They knew!

    09:53-09:55

The Pharisees were going to be livid.

    09:56-09:59

And what was their reaction when they went to the Pharisees?

    10:00-10:04

Were the Pharisees impressed that we found a man who knows how to resurrect the dead? No.

    10:05-10:07

The miracle itself meant nothing to them.

    10:07-10:10

Do you see that? They said, "Hey, we've got to call a meeting.

    10:10-10:15

Let's get to council together. Emergency meeting." Like, well, who was meeting?

    10:15-10:19

Well, this was sort of, you could call it Israel's Supreme Court.

    10:19-10:26

And what they did was they came up with what one person called a plausible disguise.

    10:27-10:31

They had this meeting and they're like, "Okay, here's the thing, guys.

    10:32-10:42

Word gets out about this, the Romans are going to crush us." Now, they weren't really concerned about political matters at all.

    10:42-10:47

Now this might be a hard concept for us to grasp, but I want us to try.

    10:47-10:54

What they did here, again you're going to have a hard time conceptualizing this, so don't tune out.

    10:55-11:04

What they did here was invent an imaginary crisis in order to get everyone on board with their insane plan.

    11:04-11:08

I know, right? I mean, have you ever seen such a thing in your life?

    11:09-11:11

I'm going to take another run at that here.

    11:12-11:23

Because there's a couple people that are like, "What's going on?" They invented an imaginary crisis to get everyone on board with their insane plan to eliminate Jesus.

    11:25-11:29

Because they can't just be like, "We're sick of Jesus, kill Him." They have to have some reason.

    11:30-11:35

Like, "Oh, if the Romans find out about this, they're going to come and they're going to..." Really?

    11:35-11:40

You know, that's an interesting line of thinking, because Jesus wasn't some revolutionary.

    11:40-11:42

    Jesus had no army.

    11:42-11:43

    Jesus never killed anyone.

    11:44-11:48

In fact, He was literally going around doing the exact opposite of killing.

    11:49-11:57

And their conclusion to the man who resurrects the dead was, "We've got to get rid of Him." Pick an excuse, any excuse will do.

    11:57-12:04

By the way, just parenthetically, never underestimate the power of unbelief.

    12:04-12:06

    It's staggering!

    12:07-12:09

    Like, how staggering is it?

    12:09-12:11

We're going to get there eventually, Lord willing.

    12:12-12:17

But do you realize when you get to John chapter 10, they made plans to kill Lazarus!

    12:18-12:18

    Why?

    12:19-12:22

Because everybody was believing in Jesus, because Jesus resurrected Lazarus.

    12:22-12:29

So they're like, "Oh, we're going to kill him too!" That is how disgusting unbelief gets.

    12:29-12:32

Oh, and by the way, also parenthetically, they were wrong.

    12:32-12:40

You know, this false crisis thing they created was dead wrong because killing Jesus didn't protect Israel, did it?

    12:40-12:45

Forty years later, Jerusalem, the temple, everything destroyed.

    12:46-12:47

    So, they were wrong.

    12:48-12:49

Back to the text, verse 49.

    12:50-13:04

"But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, 'You know nothing at all, nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.

    13:05-13:11

He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation.

    13:12-13:18

And not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

    13:19-13:20

    So enter Caiaphas.

    13:20-13:28

He was the son-in-law of Annas, who was the former high priest, and Caiaphas was the current high priest.

    13:28-13:34

And in the Old Testament, when you were high priest, you were high priest for life.

    13:35-13:38

In the New Testament, when you were high priest, you were high priest for money.

    13:40-13:46

At this point, it was a political position and Rome would give it to whoever had the highest bid.

    13:47-13:48

Like, why are you telling us this?

    13:48-13:52

Because that tells you the quality of person you're going to get in that office.

    13:52-13:53

    Are you with me?

    13:54-13:54

    Are you with me?

    13:55-13:55

    Okay.

    13:56-14:07

So this high priest, the leader of the religious elite of Israel, comes right out of the gate with a great opening statement.

    14:08-14:21

Did you see that? He's like, "You know nothing at all." The high priest interjects the Pharisees and basically he goes, "You people are idiots. You don't have a clue what's going on, do you?

    14:21-14:32

You're that dumb. You know nothing." He says, verse 50, check this, he says, "It is better for you that one man should die for the people." We're going to talk about that statement in a second.

    14:33-14:48

But you have to see that he says, "It is better." Not, "It is right." Not, "It is just." Not, "It is God-honoring." None of those things were a factor for his decision here, for his sales pitch.

    14:48-14:52

All he cared about was what was beneficial, what's good for us.

    14:53-15:03

What was beneficial for him and for them was to get rid of the one who's threatening them, undermining their rules, distracting their people.

    15:05-15:14

So Caiaphas and really the whole court sort of viewed the Jesus situation as, "How does it affect me?" So he gives this sales pitch.

    15:15-15:18

And notice, again, try to imagine with me please.

    15:19-15:28

to try to conceptualize that He gives His sales pitch for His insane plan under the guise of patriotism.

    15:29-15:29

    Did you see that?

    15:30-15:34

Either one man dies, or the whole nation dies.

    15:35-15:36

How much do you love Israel?

    15:37-15:38

Would you like to see Israel perish?

    15:39-15:42

Then don't you think it's better that one man die than our whole nation?

    15:43-15:44

I thought you loved our country.

    15:44-15:47

Do you see Him waving the flag of Israel as He's saying this?

    15:48-15:53

I have to see how the Word of God points out the statement.

    15:53-16:03

He says basically, "If we kill Jesus, Israel can be saved." If we kill Jesus, Israel can be saved, and that is a true statement, but not the way he meant it.

    16:04-16:04

    Right?

    16:06-16:15

Caiaphas here actually made a sound doctrinal statement of substitutionary atonement, but he had no idea what he was saying.

    16:16-16:18

Some people might call that irony.

    16:19-16:21

Boy, that was really ironic the way he said that.

    16:21-16:24

Some of us might call it providence.

    16:24-16:29

But God somehow in this instance used Caiaphas to prophesy.

    16:29-16:48

Caiaphas meant one thing, but God so arranged Caiaphas' very words coming out of his mouth to prophesy, to echo Isaiah 53.6 that says, "The Lord has laid on him, the Messiah, "the iniquity of us all." It's going to be a whole other sermon, but it's not going to be.

    16:49-17:04

Just how awesome God's providence is, that He would take the words of a man who intended to kill Jesus for malicious and sinful and selfish reasons, and He would orchestrate the very words to be prophetic.

    17:06-17:06

    It's staggering.

    17:07-17:08

    Look at v. 53.

    17:09-17:11

It says, "So from that day on, they made plans to put Him to death.

    17:12-17:38

Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, went from there to the region near the wilderness to a town called Ephraim, and there he stayed with the disciples." So Caiaphas' little sales pitch, his little speech, it worked, because by the end of the next week, they will have, also by God's providence, they will have successfully killed Jesus Christ.

    17:39-17:43

But Jesus withdrew because he knew it wasn't God's time yet.

    17:44-17:49

It had to happen according to God's calendar, and Jesus said it's not time, so he withdrew for a while.

    17:49-17:51

What's our big takeaway here, church?

    17:51-17:51

    Well here it is.

    17:52-17:54

Some people just flat out oppose Jesus Christ.

    17:55-17:57

    Today, more than ever.

    17:57-17:57

    Why?

    17:58-17:59

    Because Jesus is a threat.

    18:00-18:04

Jesus is a threat to every single person in this room.

    18:05-18:07

Jesus is a threat to every single person watching this stream.

    18:08-18:12

Jesus is a threat to every single person that's ever walked on this planet.

    18:13-18:15

Jesus Christ is not just some ticket to heaven.

    18:16-18:24

If the Bible is true and we believe it is, Jesus Christ is the Lord of the universe and that is a challenge to every single one of us.

    18:25-18:31

Because I can't be Lord of my life and Jesus Christ be Lord of my life at the same time.

    18:32-18:34

You know that throne that you have on your heart?

    18:35-18:36

    It's not a two-seater.

    18:36-18:42

Either you're sitting on it or Jesus Christ is sitting on it, but you're not both sitting on it.

    18:42-18:53

And that's why repentance, believing in Jesus, it means getting off of the throne of your life and allowing Jesus Christ His rightful place as your Lord.

    18:54-19:02

Believing means turning from your sin and embracing the life-changing transformation that Jesus Christ offers.

    19:03-19:12

But if you love your self-centered ways too much, like the Pharisees, Jesus Christ is just simply a threat that you want rid of.

    19:13-19:17

So there are those that obey Jesus, and we saw there are those that oppose Jesus.

    19:17-19:22

Finally today, Jot this down, number three, there are those that observe Jesus.

    19:23-19:34

Verse 55 says, "Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover to purify themselves." That was just part of the Levitical law.

    19:35-19:35

    Look at this.

    19:36-19:58

"They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, 'What do you think, that he will not come to the feast at all?' Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was he should let them know so that they might arrest him." It says that here's a group of people that were seeking Jesus.

    19:59-19:59

    Why?

    20:00-20:01

    Why were they seeking Jesus?

    20:02-20:03

    Because this was the Passover.

    20:03-20:07

Let's talk for a second about Jesus' Passover track record.

    20:07-20:12

The first time we see Jesus at the Passover was John chapter 2.

    20:13-20:13

Do you remember what he did?

    20:14-20:18

He made a whip and drove out the money changers and the animals.

    20:19-20:25

And I'm sure that was all anybody talked about for months or years after that.

    20:25-20:26

    Could you imagine?

    20:26-20:28

Well, that was the first Passover we have recorded in John.

    20:28-20:39

Then you get to the next Passover Jesus attends, is in John chapter 6, and that's when Jesus fed the thousands of people with the little boy's lunch.

    20:39-20:47

So you can imagine, here's a group of people, like, okay, at one Passover he drove out the money change, at another Passover he fed thousands.

    20:47-20:49

Like, what do you think Jesus is going to do this year?

    20:50-20:52

Like, how's he going to top what he did last year?

    20:53-20:54

    Is he coming?

    20:55-20:56

What do you think he's going to do?

    20:57-21:01

You see, these people, they weren't obedient, and they weren't opposed.

    21:02-21:05

    They were just observers, right?

    21:06-21:06

    They were just observers.

    21:07-21:13

And you're like, "Okay, well, where are these people today?" They're in church. They're in church.

    21:13-21:17

    They fill churches everywhere.

    21:18-21:23

People who personally haven't received Christ, but they're not against Him either.

    21:24-21:25

Now listen to me, please, closely.

    21:26-21:36

I'm not talking about the person that's coming to church and really seeking, "And you know what, Jeff, I'm not there yet, but I'm seeking, and I want to know, and I want to grow." I'm not talking about that person.

    21:37-21:55

I'm talking about the person that warms a seat for years, and has heard the gospel a hundred times, and has been part of worship, and has not personally received Christ, has no intention to personally receive Christ.

    21:56-21:59

Why do those people go to church? I don't know.

    22:00-22:02

Maybe it makes them feel better about themselves.

    22:03-22:07

Maybe it's a habit. Maybe they're under compulsion to go with their family.

    22:07-22:11

Their wife wants them to go, their parents make them go. Whatever.

    22:12-22:16

But I've got to be honest with you, I don't understand the mindset.

    22:17-22:22

I don't understand how somebody can sit in a church and you can hear what God has done for you in Jesus Christ.

    22:23-22:24

He spared not His own son.

    22:25-22:29

You hear the call to respond and you hear what God has done for others.

    22:29-22:44

We just watched a video of a family from our church that gave incredible testimony to the work of the Lord and you hear it and then you just leave, unmoved, unchanged, indifferent.

    22:45-22:46

    I don't get it.

    22:47-22:51

I don't get how you can be in the presence of the Almighty and just be...

    22:52-22:54

You're not in awe of God's power.

    22:54-22:56

You're not astonished by God's love.

    22:56-22:58

You're not amazed by God's grace.

    22:58-23:01

You're not trembling at God's judgment.

    23:01-23:04

You're not terrified of God's wrath.

    23:04-23:07

Nothing just really gets to you.

    23:07-23:16

And somehow there are people that leave church with the emotional reaction of somebody who who just watched an infomercial about gutter guards.

    23:17-23:17

    Are you an observer?

    23:19-23:24

For a lot of people, church is to you what Passover was to this crowd.

    23:24-23:27

Meaning it's merely the event that you show up to observe.

    23:28-23:30

But Jesus Christ has no place in your life.

    23:30-23:31

    He's given no thought.

    23:32-23:33

    He's not your Lord.

    23:33-23:39

From the time you leave here until the time you return, Jesus Christ has no place in your life.

    23:40-23:44

And honestly, I think observers can be some of the hardest people to reach.

    23:45-23:50

Because I can stand up here and say, "You need Jesus Christ in your life!

    23:50-24:00

He needs to be your Lord and Savior!" I can stand up here and I can say that week after week after week, and you can just sit there and say, "He's not talking to me.

    24:01-24:02

    I'm not against Jesus.

    24:02-24:07

I'm here, ain't I?" But just being here and watching doesn't take away your sin.

    24:08-24:32

Just being here and observing what's happening doesn't grant you heaven, Jesus' gift must be received, and He's a Lord to bow down to. So which one are you? Which one are you? There's three groups, right? You either obey the gospel, you're opposed to the gospel, or you just observe the gospel. There's three groups, but you realize, understand, biblically, there's only two categories.

    24:32-24:37

There's really only two categories. There are people that obey and there are people that don't obey.

    24:37-24:39

Here's how Jesus said it in Luke 11, 23.

    24:40-24:50

He said, "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." So opposing Jesus Christ and observing Jesus Christ really are the same category.

    24:51-25:04

You can reject with animosity, or you can reject with complete indifference, but it's still rejecting either way, because Jesus Christ is Savior and He is Lord at the same time.

    25:05-25:07

He always was and He always will be.

    25:08-25:09

    Do you believe that?

    25:10-25:11

    Do you know Him?

    25:11-25:12

    Let's pray.

    25:12-25:26

Father in heaven, Father in heaven, we're astounded as we come to Your Word and see that people watched You resurrect a dead man and still not everybody fell on their face to worship You.

    25:27-25:34

Father, we know that same phenomenon is taking place in churches everywhere, every week.

    25:34-25:38

Father, opening our spiritual eyes, that's a work that your Holy Spirit has to do, Father.

    25:39-25:41

I can't do it, our worship team can't do it.

    25:41-25:45

Father, only You can open a person's eyes.

    25:46-25:50

So Father, I pray this morning that You would open some eyes.

    25:50-25:53

That we would see Jesus Christ for who He is.

    25:54-25:56

    Not just some ancient teacher.

    25:57-26:01

Not some moral, religious guy to follow.

    26:02-26:07

He is Lord of all who is still in the business of resurrecting people.

    26:08-26:23

Father, I pray for those who have opposed the Gospel, and I pray, Father, for the countless people who just observe that Your Holy Spirit would wrestle them to the ground and bring them to that place of repentance.

    26:24-26:36

Father, we thank You for the power of Your Word and Spirit, both of which are so powerfully and actively working together Even right now, we glorify Your name through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

    26:37-26:38

    Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 11:45-57

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Explain how believing in Jesus is an act of obedience.

  3. Why do people see Jesus as a threat? In what way is Jesus a “threat” to a person? Explain how that keeps people from believing.

  4. If someone does not truly believe in and follow Jesus, why would that person continue to attend church?

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Resurrection Power.

Introduction:

The Two Most Amazing Things That Jesus Does (John 11:38-44):

  1. He Raises the Dead .

(John 5:25) - Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.

  1. He Partners with People.

1 Corinthians 3:6-9 - I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.

  • 00:48-00:51

I'm always amazed at the things that people can do.

    00:52-00:53

    Are you like me?

    00:54-00:56

You know that show America's Got Talent?

    00:56-00:57

How many people watch America's Got Talent?

    00:58-00:59

    Isn't that show amazing?

    01:00-01:02

They get these people on here with these...

    01:02-01:04

    Total confession time.

    01:05-01:07

I really only liked that show during the auditions.

    01:08-01:08

    Okay?

    01:08-01:12

When it gets to the really well-polished professional acts, I kind of tune out.

    01:12-01:18

I'm like, "Boring." I like to see the people come out with the really weird things like the chicken that plays the piano or whatever.

    01:19-01:29

But I don't think there's a person who has a gift that amazes me more than my wife.

    01:30-01:35

Erin is a human baloney detector.

    01:37-01:38

    She knows when you're lying.

    01:39-01:43

And I see a lot of people shifting very uncomfortably in their seats.

    01:46-01:47

    But listen, don't worry.

    01:48-01:52

If you're lying to her, she's not going to call you out on it on the spot.

    01:53-01:57

But I just want you to know that she knows when you're lying.

    01:58-01:59

    She just does.

    02:01-02:07

Many years ago, serving in a different church, I had a lady come in that was asking for food.

    02:07-02:17

She said she hasn't eaten in a long time, and she was really desperate, and Aaron was nearby, and I called her over, and she came in to the office, and sat down.

    02:18-02:21

And Aaron looked at the lady for a second, and she said, what kind of drugs are you on?

    02:22-02:25

And I was like, you know what?

    02:25-02:27

I'm going to go somewhere for a while.

    02:28-02:29

I'm like, this is going to get really ugly.

    02:30-02:32

And the girl got so indignant.

    02:32-02:34

She was like, I'm not on anything.

    02:35-02:36

I can't believe you would ask me.

    02:36-02:39

And Aaron just sat there like, mm-hmm, OK, OK.

    02:42-02:44

And then we got to talking to the lady in a little bit.

    02:45-02:57

And after a few minutes, the lady kind of put her head down and she said, "Heroin, crack, some weed." And she just gave this list of drugs.

    02:57-03:17

She goes, "Yeah, I'm on a lot of different things." And Aaron goes, "Okay, well, we're going to get you some help." And afterwards, I'm like, "How did you know that?" I'm like, "Okay, I would have asked the question about the drugs, but I usually do like at least a 25-minute on-ramp before I just blast strangers with that kind of a question." But she just knew. She just knew.

    03:18-03:26

She took one look and she goes, "I said, 'How did you know?'" "I just knew." "How did you know she was lying?" Aaron goes, "I could tell she was lying." Amazing.

    03:29-03:39

And today we're going to look at Jesus Christ because there's two things that He does that is as amazing as my wife is.

    03:39-03:44

There's two things that Jesus Christ does that blow everything else out of the water.

    03:44-03:47

that anything, that anybody, anywhere can do.

    03:47-03:50

There are two things we're going to look at today that Jesus does.

    03:53-03:54

    They're completely staggered.

    03:56-03:58

Turn in your Bibles to John 11.

    04:01-04:03

Just recall where we've covered so far.

    04:03-04:06

Jesus got word that his buddy Lazarus was sick.

    04:06-04:13

And because Jesus loved Lazarus and Mary and Martha, the Bible says that Jesus waited two days.

    04:14-04:19

Yes, he waited two days because he loved them.

    04:21-04:28

Well, Jesus shows up in Bethany, in Lazarus' hometown, four days after Lazarus died.

    04:30-04:59

And we saw this last week, Mary and Martha both came to Jesus on different occasions, and they were like, "Jesus, if only you'd been here!" You remember Jesus said to Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life." Jesus went on to say, "Lazarus will rise again." And we saw last week in the middle of all the pain and confusion, Jesus wept.

    05:01-05:03

    John 11.35, Jesus wept.

    05:05-05:08

That's the shortest and biggest verse of the Bible.

    05:11-05:12

    So here we are.

    05:13-05:26

Our series, if you're visiting with us, we're in this series called "Knowing Jesus." And we're moving from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    05:28-05:34

And today, we're going to talk about about the two most amazing things that Jesus does.

    05:37-05:42

Now, to be fair, that could be my opinion.

    05:44-05:47

But these two things are in the text.

    05:48-05:48

    Okay?

    05:52-05:58

And in about 25 minutes or so, you're going to share this opinion with me.

    06:00-06:03

Let's see the two most amazing things that Jesus does.

    06:03-06:04

    Number one, write this down.

    06:06-06:07

    He raises the dead.

    06:09-06:11

Let's pick up in verse 38.

    06:14-06:18

It says, "Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb.

    06:18-06:21

It was a cave and a stone lay against it.

    06:23-06:29

Jesus said, 'Take away the stone.'" The Bible says Jesus was deeply moved again.

    06:30-06:31

We talked about that last week.

    06:32-06:34

    That's not a compassion term.

    06:34-06:37

    That's a disturbed term.

    06:37-06:41

That's a little bit agitated term.

    06:44-06:45

    He was moved again.

    06:47-06:52

The Bible says that Lazarus was in this tomb and there was a stone over the cave.

    06:53-06:54

Why did they put the stone?

    06:54-06:57

It obviously was to keep animals and robbers out.

    06:57-06:59

It was to keep the smell in.

    07:00-07:00

We'll talk about that in a second.

    07:01-07:03

    Pick up in verse 39.

    07:03-07:29

It says, "Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to Him, 'Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days.' Jesus said to her, 'Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God.

    07:32-07:36

So, Jesus says, "Remove the stone." And Martha's like, "Not a good idea.

    07:38-07:44

Because he'll stink." See, the Jews did not embalm.

    07:45-07:47

    They wrapped the body.

    07:49-07:53

They added spices to help with the smell, and they would put in a tomb.

    07:55-08:00

And that's so foreign to us to this sterile environment, right?

    08:00-08:09

In our day, when somebody passes, we have morticians, and we have funeral homes, and we have all these chemicals, and formaldehyde, and all of these things.

    08:09-08:29

So in our day, when somebody dies, we have these very professional people come and dress the body up, and do the hair, and makeup, and the whole thing, so that when you go to the funeral home, the person looks like they just came from the prom and they're laying down taking a nap.

    08:31-08:31

    Right?

    08:34-08:45

The funeral home is clean, it's fresh smelling, and that's what we're used to, but that wasn't what was experienced here.

    08:45-09:01

It was, "Wrap the body, put some spices so it doesn't stink too bad, and we're going to put it in a tomb and cover it with a stone." Well, that decomposing tissue releases hydrogen sulfide and methane.

    09:02-09:04

    So the smell gets horrible.

    09:06-09:11

And you also have to wonder how Lazarus would have looked after four days of decaying.

    09:14-09:29

So Martha, Jesus says, "Move the stone. Take away the stone." And Martha's like, "Lord, by this time there'll be an odor." Still, it seems that Martha's a little bit hesitant, right?

    09:31-09:35

Jesus says, "Move the stone," and Martha's like, "Look, look, look, okay.

    09:36-09:39

I've already established that I believe you're the Messiah.

    09:39-09:54

We've talked about that, but you wanna move the stone from his tomb, And you expect me to think that a corpse is going to come walking out of his grave.

    09:56-09:59

And I love the fact that Jesus didn't give her a rebuke.

    10:01-10:02

But He gave her a reminder.

    10:04-10:08

He just said, "Have you forgotten my promise?

    10:08-10:13

You're going to see God's glory." I love that.

    10:14-10:19

Sometimes we just need the Word of God reminded to us, right?

    10:21-10:41

There's times we know the Word, and we could tell somebody else the Word, but isn't it just refreshing sometimes, especially when we're in a state like Martha, where we're in a rough season, and somebody just comes along and gives us that gentle reminder, "Hey, I want to remind you of what God said." That's what Jesus was doing for her here.

    10:41-10:52

In verse 41, it says, "So they took away the stone, and Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, 'Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.

    10:54-11:05

I knew that You always hear Me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that You sent Me.'" See, Jesus was making it clear here.

    11:05-11:08

This whole event was for the sake of other people's faith.

    11:10-11:40

whole thing. That's why Jesus waited before going to Bethany. Why wouldn't you hurry up when you heard Lazarus was sick? Well, it was for their faith. It's because I love Mary and Martha. And we saw, that was in verse 5, and then we saw back in verse 15, Jesus said to the disciples, "Lazarus is dead and I'm glad I wasn't there." Like, why? For your sake. This whole thing Jesus is doing for the sake of the faith of the people there.

    11:42-11:48

And Jesus, He just says this prayer.

    11:50-12:00

He says, "Father, I thank You that You've heard me, and You always hear me." Notice there's no asking for anything, there's no petitions.

    12:02-12:23

Jesus is just simply saying, "Father, show them how we are connected." In verse 43, it says, "When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out!'" A loud voice.

    12:23-12:31

The Greek actually could be translated "in a loud voice, with a loud voice." This wasn't a whisper.

    12:32-12:36

    Jesus shouted.

    12:39-12:44

You know, I read this week, one commentator made this statement.

    12:45-12:50

He said if Jesus didn't specify Lazarus, the whole cemetery would have emptied.

    12:52-12:52

    Right?

    12:53-12:56

Like, "Dad, come out of your grave!" And there's like this rush.

    12:59-13:13

"No, no, no, just Lazarus." Verse 44 says, "The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth.

    13:13-13:26

And Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him and let him go.'" And you just have to think for a second of all the stuff that would have happened instantly.

    13:28-13:29

I mean, the man was dead for four days.

    13:33-13:34

What do you think that looked like?

    13:36-13:37

I mean, can you see the scene?

    13:37-13:41

He's in this cave and they move the stone and Jesus shouts.

    13:41-13:54

And I don't know how much time passed, but you have to think, maybe there were a few seconds of people like, "What's going to happen?" And then here comes the dead man.

    13:58-14:07

And Jesus just very simply says, "Hey, get those cloths off of him and let him go." But you know, Jesus promised that this kind of thing would happen.

    14:10-14:27

John 5.25 Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, those who hear will live.

    14:30-14:32

You see, Lazarus was a preview of the coming resurrection.

    14:33-14:44

At the rapture, the Bible says Jesus calls all His dead out of the grave and those alive at the rapture will join them to be taken to heaven.

    14:48-14:50

But the Bible says there are two resurrections.

    14:52-15:04

There's one for the saved, for those who trust Jesus Christ before the rapture, but there's a resurrection for the unsaved after the millennial kingdom of Jesus Christ." Revelation 20.

    15:05-15:06

    So the point is this.

    15:06-15:18

Whoever you are, wherever you are, sitting here watching, wherever you are, the stream, someday you are going to receive an indestructible body.

    15:19-15:21

    And you will live forever.

    15:22-15:32

and this indestructible body that you have will either be to enjoy forever in heaven or to suffer forever in hell.

    15:36-15:38

And you say, "Well, I'd like the first option.

    15:38-15:44

How do I enjoy heaven?" Well, you see, Lazarus is also a picture of salvation.

    15:46-15:54

"Well, how so?" Well, that John 5 passage we just looked at, Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming." That's future resurrection.

    15:55-16:04

But notice Jesus said, "and is now here." This whole idea of dead people coming alive isn't just about the resurrection.

    16:04-16:10

Jesus said that upon belief in Him, dead people are going to come alive.

    16:12-16:15

And that's exactly what Jesus does in salvation.

    16:16-16:17

He gives life to dead sinners.

    16:19-16:24

That's what we just got done celebrating a few minutes ago with Doreen and with Brady.

    16:25-16:43

They were saying, "Hey, I was dead in my sin, and now I'm considering myself dead to myself, and I'm receiving everything that Jesus Christ offers in eternal life." And understand, that is the Gospel.

    16:44-16:50

Jesus Christ did not come into the world to turn bad people into good people.

    16:50-16:55

Jesus Christ came into the world to turn dead people into alive people.

    16:57-16:58

You're like, well, how do I get that?

    16:58-17:00

    Jesus made it so clear.

    17:00-17:09

    V. 40, "If you believed..." I told you, if you believed, back in v. 25-26, Jesus said, "I am the resurrection and the life.

    17:10-17:14

He who believes in Me, though he dies, yet shall he live." Do you remember his question after that?

    17:15-17:16

    Do you believe this?

    17:17-17:17

    It's about faith.

    17:18-17:20

It's about believing that Jesus is who He is.

    17:21-17:25

And it's believing that Jesus accomplished what He said He would accomplish.

    17:26-17:31

You have to hear His voice and believe.

    17:36-17:40

You have to say, "Jesus, I'm receiving Your gift today.

    17:40-17:41

    I am following You.

    17:41-17:48

This is me now." receive the gift.

    17:48-17:49

    Belief.

    17:49-17:53

It's not through works, it's not through your character, it's not through your conduct.

    17:54-17:56

It's about, do you believe in Jesus Christ?

    17:59-18:03

But I have to tell you, there's no hope for the person who doesn't believe.

    18:06-18:07

    There just isn't.

    18:08-18:18

And if you hear this message, and you can walk away saying, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I still choose not to believe in Jesus Christ.

    18:18-18:20

I don't have any hope for you whatsoever.

    18:21-18:23

    Because there's no plan B.

    18:24-18:38

God's not in heaven saying, "Well, if you don't like this gift of grace and eternal life through me sacrificing my son, why don't you come over here and let me show you another option that I have for you that you might like a little better." There is no plan B.

    18:40-18:43

It's either life from Jesus Christ or dying in your sin.

    18:43-18:45

    Those are your two options.

    18:48-18:55

The most amazing thing that Jesus does, we just celebrated it today.

    18:56-19:00

And you know, we weren't planning the baptism service when I planned the preaching calendar.

    19:00-19:08

So the fact that we had people being baptized on the day we talk about Lazarus' resurrection is just God's sense of humor.

    19:11-19:15

The most amazing thing that Jesus does is He gives life to the dead.

    19:17-19:18

    Do you believe that?

    19:20-19:21

    Have you received Him?

    19:22-19:24

That's the most amazing thing He does.

    19:29-19:32

Well, there's one more thing in this passage I want to talk about for a couple of minutes.

    19:36-19:41

And it is not as amazing as raising the dead because there is nothing more amazing than that.

    19:42-19:48

But there is something else that Jesus does in this passage that absolutely blows my mind.

    19:49-19:56

That I cannot - and I've been a Christian now since 1995 - and I cannot wrap my brain around this.

    19:59-20:04

The second most amazing thing that Jesus does - write this down - He partners with people.

    20:09-20:10

    partners with people.

    20:11-20:29

What I want you to see here is in this passage, there's a combination of divine work and human work taking place for the resurrection of Lazarus.

    20:32-20:39

Remember back in v. 39, Jesus said, "Take away the stone." and they, verse 41, took away the stone.

    20:40-20:44

So I've got to ask, do you think Jesus could have done that?

    20:45-20:47

Do you think Jesus could have moved that stone Himself?

    20:49-20:51

I mean, come on. Come on.

    20:53-20:54

He just resurrected a dead man.

    20:56-20:57

Do you think a pebble's going to bother Him?

    20:59-21:09

Do you think for a second Jesus couldn't have said, watch this, stone and paint that thing into oblivion or made it vanish?

    21:09-21:10

Do you think Jesus could have done that?

    21:11-21:12

You better believe he could have done that.

    21:15-21:16

But that's not what he did.

    21:17-21:19

He said, "Take away the stone," and they did.

    21:20-21:28

And then, verse 44, look at it again.

    21:30-21:40

Lazarus comes out all wrapped up. Jesus says, "Unbind him and let him go." And once again, I'm baffled because Jesus enlists help.

    21:43-21:47

I mean, couldn't Jesus have turned those grave clothes into a tuxedo or something?

    21:48-21:48

    Right?

    21:50-21:55

That would have been cool, or like, feety pajamas, or anything.

    21:56-21:59

Jesus could have been like, "Bring him out," and poof!

    21:59-22:03

Here comes Lazarus in a brand new toga or whatever.

    22:06-22:06

    Dead.

    22:06-22:12

He says, "Hey, take those cloths off of him.

    22:12-22:27

Those grave clothes." And I've got to tell you, those are the parts of this passage that I have a harder time wrapping my brain around than the whole dead man coming back to life thing.

    22:29-22:35

By show of hands, who here today would say that you are hesitant to ask people for help?

    22:36-22:37

Who would say, "I am hesitant"?

    22:37-22:38

Oh, like almost all of you.

    22:40-22:42

"I'm hesitant to ask people..." That's me too.

    22:42-22:48

"Hesitant to ask people for help." Why are we like that?

    22:49-22:51

I'm that way too, but why are we like that?

    22:53-22:54

You know, that's kind of me too.

    22:54-22:56

I hate asking people to do things that I can do myself.

    22:57-22:57

    Right?

    22:59-23:01

Or for some people, you're like, you know what?

    23:02-23:04

It's just easier to do it myself.

    23:04-23:09

And the energy it would take to ask and explain, I can just do it myself.

    23:11-23:14

Or some people would say, you know, things are a lot quicker if I do it myself.

    23:15-23:17

Or it'll be done right, right?

    23:17-23:19

It'll be done right if I do it myself.

    23:22-23:24

And here's the thing that absolutely staggers me about that.

    23:25-23:26

Do you realize God's not like that at all?

    23:31-23:34

He gets people involved in what he's doing.

    23:38-23:43

I mean, the story would make more sense to me if Jesus just showed up and said, "Okay, everybody have a seat.

    23:43-23:45

    Watch this, rock, poof, gone.

    23:45-23:47

    Dead man, poof, alive.

    23:47-23:49

    And grave clothes, poof, gone.

    23:49-23:50

    Ta-da!

    23:51-23:51

    I'm God.

    23:52-23:57

And everybody's like, "That was awesome, Jesus!" Watch this.

    23:57-23:58

But that's not what he does.

    24:00-24:01

He's like, "Hey, here's what we're gonna do.

    24:01-24:12

Move the stone." And God does the miracle, he does the heavy lifting, but somehow he prefers to partner with people.

    24:14-24:19

For example, for example, we're not gonna turn here, but I just want you to think of John 2.

    24:19-24:21

Jesus turned the water into wine.

    24:21-24:22

Remember that story, His first miracle?

    24:22-24:23

    You remember how that went?

    24:24-24:29

Jesus said, "You fill the jars, I'll turn the water into wine, and then you take the wine to the master of the feast.

    24:29-24:41

In other words, you prepare the way, I'll do the miracle, you follow up." And then you go to John 6, and Jesus created the bread for the thousands of people.

    24:41-24:44

Remember, Jesus asked His disciples to test Him.

    24:44-24:46

Where are we going to get all the bread to feed all these people?

    24:46-24:49

and this little boy gave them his lunch.

    24:52-24:53

Do you remember how that miracle happened?

    24:54-25:08

Jesus said, "You get the people seated, I'll multiply the food, and then you gather up the leftovers." In other words, you prepare the way, I'll do the miracle, you follow up.

    25:10-25:14

John 11, again, the combination of the divine and human partnership.

    25:15-25:18

You move the stone, I'll reason from the dead, you unbind them.

    25:18-25:26

In other words, you prepare the way, I'll do the miracle, you follow up.

    25:29-25:43

Jesus chooses to partner with people by using people to do what people can do to prepare the way for Him to do what only He can do.

    25:45-25:49

And then He calls us to follow up.

    25:52-25:53

    That's how the kingdom works.

    25:55-25:57

I mean, we can't give life.

    26:00-26:00

    We can move the stone.

    26:02-26:06

I mean, we can't give life, but we can minister to the one who just received new life.

    26:08-26:11

And right now, some Bible scholar is like, Wait, wait, wait, hang on a second.

    26:12-26:13

    Is this normative?

    26:16-26:19

Is this really like for the church?

    26:20-26:21

And the answer is absolutely yes.

    26:21-26:23

I want you to look at this passage with me.

    26:23-26:24

We'll have it on the screen here.

    26:24-26:26

    1 Corinthians 3.

    26:26-26:27

    Look very closely.

    26:29-26:31

    Paul says, "I planted.

    26:32-26:40

Apollos watered, but God gave the growth." So neither he who plants, nor he who waters is anything, It's only God who gives the growth.

    26:41-26:43

He who plants and he who waters are one.

    26:44-26:46

And each will receive his wages according to his labor.

    26:47-26:47

    Look at this next phrase.

    26:48-26:55

"For we are God's fellow workers." Let that sink in for a second.

    26:58-27:05

"For we are God's fellow workers." He says, "You are God's field.

    27:07-27:12

God's building." You see in this passage, it's the same thing.

    27:13-27:14

God says, "You prepare the way.

    27:16-27:21

Plant." God says, "I'll do the miracle," which is give growth.

    27:21-27:25

And then He says, "You follow up," which is watering.

    27:29-27:30

That's how God chooses to work.

    27:32-27:33

    He partners with people.

    27:33-27:33

    You prepare the way.

    27:34-27:36

I'll do the miracle, you follow up.

    27:36-27:37

    Okay, so here's the question.

    27:38-27:40

Why does God choose to work this way?

    27:40-27:41

    Why? Why?

    27:41-27:42

    Why does God do this?

    27:42-27:43

I mean, He doesn't need me.

    27:44-27:46

I think we would all agree on that, right?

    27:46-27:46

    Does God need me?

    27:47-27:48

    No, does God need you?

    27:49-27:51

No, He does not need anyone.

    27:51-27:53

So why does He do this?

    27:53-27:56

Why does God choose to work this way?

    27:58-27:59

I'm going to tell you why.

    28:01-28:01

    Write this down.

    28:04-28:05

    I don't know.

    28:08-28:14

You're like, "Okay, so we pay you?" I don't know.

    28:15-28:17

I don't know why He works this way.

    28:17-28:19

I don't know why He chooses to partner with us.

    28:19-28:20

    I don't know.

    28:24-28:26

But I am so glad that He does.

    28:29-28:36

God has given us the privilege of preparing the way.

    28:38-28:40

We get to preach the Gospel.

    28:40-28:43

We get to teach the kids and harvest kids.

    28:43-28:45

We get to lead the teenagers and youth group.

    28:46-28:48

We get to love people through hospitality.

    28:48-28:50

We get to play on a worship team.

    28:50-28:54

We get to maintain clean and organized facilities.

    28:55-28:58

We get to prepare the way.

    29:01-29:03

And we get the privilege of following up.

    29:04-29:06

We get to host small groups.

    29:06-29:07

We get to pray with people.

    29:08-29:10

    We get to baptize people.

    29:14-29:16

See He gives eternal life to those who come to Him.

    29:17-29:17

    That is all Him.

    29:21-29:23

But He's called us to prepare the way.

    29:24-29:25

    to follow up.

    29:27-29:33

Church, today, I want to call us all back to this.

    29:36-29:53

We need to see working for Christ, not as an obligation, not as a duty, not as a necessity, but a privilege to partner with God.

    29:56-30:04

This must change not only the excellence with which we carry it out, but the joyful attitude with which we serve.

    30:08-30:09

    God is giving life.

    30:12-30:15

What a joy to celebrate that in our church this morning.

    30:16-30:16

    Amen?

    30:16-30:23

God is giving life right here Through this ministry, through this church, God is giving life.

    30:23-30:25

    He's transforming people.

    30:25-30:27

He is rescuing people from hell.

    30:27-30:30

And He is changing their eternity.

    30:30-30:32

And He's allowing you and I to be a part of that?

    30:35-30:49

I just want to say, if you're not working for Christ right now in some capacity, if you're not on board with what God's doing, come and see me.

    30:49-30:55

Grab one of our leaders and say, "Hey, I want to be a part of what God's doing.

    30:57-31:04

I want to partner with God." Because church, we have stones to roll.

    31:06-31:08

And we have grave clothes to remove.

    31:09-31:10

    Are you with me?

    31:11-31:12

    Alright, let's pray.

    31:13-31:22

Father in Heaven, we sing this song sometimes, I stand in awe of You, and God, we do stand in awe of You.

    31:26-31:34

I can't fathom the kind of power that creates out of nothing, God, and I can't fathom the kind of power that can give life to the dead.

    31:36-31:44

I believe it, but that's a power that can only come from the Almighty.

    31:46-31:48

    Jesus Christ demonstrated here.

    31:50-31:53

God, I stand amazed at Your resurrection power.

    31:54-32:01

And Father, I stand amazed at the fact that You would use people like us to partner with.

    32:03-32:04

    I don't get that.

    32:05-32:07

Because Father, You know our hearts.

    32:07-32:11

We are so often wayward and distracted and complaining.

    32:15-32:19

You choose to work through us, and Father, You choose to work with us.

    32:21-32:31

And I just pray for my brothers and sisters here today, Father, as we stand in awe at Your resurrection power, that we would stand in appreciation of You.

    32:34-32:42

That You have this eternal plan that You're working on, that You've already prepared, for what You can unfold before our eyes.

    32:45-32:56

You're allowing us to come beside You and watch You work and even work with You.

    32:57-32:58

    Thank You, Father.

    33:01-33:01

    Thank You.

    33:03-33:06

We praise You in Jesus' name, Amen.

    John chapter 11.

    00:50-00:55

We're going to be picking up in verse 17 here in just a couple of moments.

    00:55-01:04

Have you noticed that some people do an absolutely terrible job comforting people?

    01:04-01:05

    Have you ever noticed that?

    01:06-01:07

    Terrible comforters.

    01:08-01:17

Several years ago I was exercising on a weight machine and the cable broke on the way down.

    01:17-01:21

And I smashed all of the fingers on both of my hands.

    01:22-01:24

But this one here, I'm not going to stick it up by itself.

    01:24-01:27

This one right here took it the worst.

    01:28-01:34

And it got swollen and it turned this really weird like purpley blue green color.

    01:35-01:38

And I was just like, it'll get better, it'll get better.

    01:38-01:41

And it got worse and worse and worse and worse.

    01:41-01:43

And Aaron's like, you need to get to the hospital.

    01:43-01:45

I'm like, no, it'll be fine.

    01:45-01:48

And I could feel my heart beating in that finger.

    01:48-01:49

You know what I'm talking about?

    01:51-02:19

Well, finally, I listened to Erin's advice and I went to the hospital, and the nurse said, "We're going to have to relieve the pressure on that." And I'm like, "Oh, how are we going to do that?" And she pulled out this white pen-looking thing that had this little black tip on it that suddenly turned blazing hot orange.

    02:20-02:25

And she goes, we're going to have to puncture through your fingernail to relieve the pressure.

    02:26-02:28

And I'm like, is it going to hurt?

    02:29-02:30

    No joke.

    02:30-02:33

She grabbed my hand, tucked it under her arm.

    02:34-02:34

    She goes, yes.

    02:35-02:36

    Jabbed my finger.

    02:37-02:37

    Whoa!

    02:38-02:39

Do you know how bad that thing hurt?

    02:40-02:41

    Oh my gosh.

    02:43-02:46

And then she says, you're probably going to lose that fingernail.

    02:47-02:47

    Awesome.

    02:48-02:52

I guess my insurance doesn't cover bedside manner, right?

    02:54-02:56

But not a great job comforting.

    02:57-02:59

It was obviously a very traumatic thing for me.

    03:00-03:05

But there's no worse time to be a bad comforter than at a funeral.

    03:06-03:12

And changing gears here, getting very serious, I attended a funeral many years ago.

    03:13-03:16

It was a friend of a kid who went to our church.

    03:16-03:23

A bunch of them were jumping off the bridge at Moraine, just having fun doing things that goofy teenage kids do, and the one kid drowned.

    03:24-03:39

And I attended the funeral, again, because the friend of the deceased boy went to our church, and they brought some priest in that was completely unfamiliar with the family or the situation or anything.

    03:40-04:11

And this priest was just standing up there just stammering and blathering forever about, "What are you talking about?" And at one point, he pointed the casket and he said, "I didn't know him, but I'm sure he was a wonderful young man." And I'm just sitting there going, "Stop talking! You have a room full of grieving people, and you have supposedly the greatest comforting message in the world, and you're just not giving it. Like, what's What's the matter with you?

    04:12-04:13

    You completely blew it.

    04:14-04:16

Well today, we're going to be heading to a funeral.

    04:17-04:22

We're going to learn two things that you absolutely have to know about Jesus Christ.

    04:23-04:25

    Especially, especially when you're hurting.

    04:26-04:31

John chapter 11, we saw that Jesus had gotten word that his buddy Lazarus was ill.

    04:32-04:37

The Bible says because Jesus loved Lazarus and his sisters, he waited two days to go to them.

    04:37-04:40

And Bethany, like why would he wait?

    04:40-04:44

Well, Jesus said the illness was to display God's glory.

    04:44-04:50

And this is all leading to His last, but His greatest, public miracle.

    04:51-04:53

And that's raising Lazarus from the dead.

    04:53-04:56

Oh, spoiler alert. That's next week's message.

    04:56-05:04

But you know, there were two other resurrections recorded in Scripture that we know about, that Jesus performed.

    05:05-05:08

One was Jairus' daughter, and the other one was the widow's son.

    05:09-05:14

And you're like, "Well, what's so significant about Lazarus' resurrection?" And I think it's this.

    05:15-05:23

The funerals, the resurrection, rather, for Jairus' daughter and the widow's son, those took place immediately after the person died.

    05:23-05:37

So I suppose some silly skeptic could just try to explain it away, to say, "Well, maybe they weren't really dead, maybe they're unconscious, maybe they're in a coma, whatever." Which is wrong, but some silly skeptic could try to explain it away.

    05:37-05:43

but this event, this resurrection takes place four days after Lazarus died.

    05:44-05:45

So look at verse 17 with me.

    05:46-05:53

It says, "Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days.

    05:54-06:04

Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother." Stop there.

    06:04-06:08

A funeral in those days lasted seven days.

    06:08-06:13

So four days in was sort of right in the middle of the funeral.

    06:13-06:32

In those days, the actual funeral would be seven days, but then they would have 30 days of mourning and comforting, and people would stick around and they would spend that time telling stories about the deceased, sharing some favorite memories, things like that.

    06:32-06:42

You know, it's not like in our day, when somebody dies, it's like, "Run to the funeral home for an hour visitation," and we have the funeral, and then it's like all over.

    06:43-06:50

We sort of rush through it, but in those days, they really took their time to remember and celebrate the person.

    06:51-06:58

So in the middle of the funeral, here comes Jesus, revealing two things, again, you need to know when you're hurting.

    06:58-07:00

So on your outline, jot these down.

    07:01-07:02

    Knowing Jesus when you're hurting.

    07:03-07:07

Number one, He is present and powerful today.

    07:08-07:12

He is present and powerful today.

    07:13-07:19

Look at verse 20. It says, "So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met Him.

    07:20-07:22

But Mary remained seated in the house.

    07:23-07:28

Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if you had been here, My brother would not have died.

    07:29-07:32

The first time we meet Martha is back in Luke 10.

    07:33-07:37

And in verse 40 of that chapter, she's telling Jesus what to do.

    07:38-07:41

Remember that story? Mary's sitting, listening to Jesus.

    07:41-07:43

Martha's rushing around, trying to serve.

    07:43-07:49

And finally Martha's like, "Hey, hey, Jesus, tell Mary to be helping me in the kitchen.

    07:49-07:54

Tell her to get off her rear end and help me." That's a paraphrase.

    07:54-08:02

But here, she rushes to meet Jesus and she leads with another pretty bold statement.

    08:03-08:11

Right out of the gate, she goes, "Jesus, if only you'd been here." Where have you been? If you'd been here, things would be different.

    08:12-08:21

Notice that Martha had confidence that Jesus could heal the sick, but she didn't have confidence that Jesus could raise the dead.

    08:22-08:27

If you were here when he was sick, you could have done something, but obviously now it's too late.

    08:27-08:34

Look at verse 22, Martha continues, she says, "But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you.

    08:35-08:40

Jesus said to her, 'Your brother will rise again.'" What was she expecting from Jesus?

    08:40-08:50

I mean, obviously, she wasn't expecting resurrection because look at how she responded when Jesus said that Lazarus is going to resurrect.

    08:50-08:54

He said it very plainly, "Your brother will rise again." Look at her response, verse 24.

    08:54-08:55

    Check this.

    08:55-09:07

Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus says, "Lazarus will rise." And Martha's like, "Yeah, yeah, someday.

    09:08-09:08

    Someday.

    09:08-09:10

    I know Jesus.

    09:10-09:10

    Someday.

    09:11-09:12

    Someday in the distant future.

    09:13-09:14

    Someday.

    09:15-09:21

Lazarus is going to resurrect in the last day." And that is an absolutely true statement.

    09:22-09:25

It's good theology, but it's very weak faith.

    09:26-09:28

Because look at how Jesus responds to that.

    09:28-09:32

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life.

    09:32-09:37

Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.

    09:37-09:40

And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.

    09:41-09:49

Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.

    09:50-09:55

You notice how Jesus took Martha from a program to a person.

    09:56-10:05

Lazarus will resurrect, and she goes, "Yes, according to my systematic theology framework, he is going to resurrect." And that's true.

    10:05-10:18

He is going to resurrect in the last days, and Jesus goes, "Okay, but resurrection is not merely some thing on a list on a page in a systematic theology book.

    10:18-10:24

Jesus said, "Do you know what resurrection is?" He said, "I am the resurrection.

    10:25-10:28

I am the life." I love that.

    10:28-10:39

Notice Jesus didn't merely say, "Oh, hey Martha, I'm curing the dead." He said, "I am the resurrection and the life." This is the fifth of seven "I am" statements in John.

    10:40-10:41

We've seen this as we've gone through John.

    10:41-10:43

Jesus has said, "I am the bread of life.

    10:43-10:44

I'm the light of the world.

    10:44-10:46

    I'm the good shepherd.

    10:46-10:51

I'm the door." Every single one of them is a claim to deity.

    10:51-10:51

    Understand that.

    10:52-10:55

When Jesus says, "I am," he's saying that he's God.

    10:56-12:06

Because clear back in Exodus chapter 3, when Moses, speaking to the Lord, said, "Who should I tell them sent me?" Like, "What is your name?" God told Moses that his name is "I am." Yahweh, Y-H-W-H, the Tetragrammaton, it's called. That is a fancy way of saying God has a name. God is like his title, but Yahweh, I AM, that is his name. And Jesus here, throughout John, is saying, "I am, I am." And here, Jesus says, "I am the resurrection." In other words, dead, brought back to life, that's what I do. And then he says, "I am the life. He is the source of life. Every other living being got life from someone." Raise your hand if you got life from someone here. Okay, that's all of us. We've all... that's one of those, is everybody still listening tests? Most of you passed. Every other living being got life from someone, but only God is the source of life.

    12:07-12:11

God didn't get life from someone else.

    12:11-12:14

God doesn't have parents that gave birth to him.

    12:14-12:22

God is the originator of all life, and that is exactly what Jesus is claiming here about himself.

    12:22-12:30

I am not only the one who raises the dead, I'm the one who gives life to everyone else.

    12:30-14:04

But church, I've got to be honest with you, I think way too often church, we find ourselves exactly like Martha in this passage. Like Martha how? Look again at verse 23 where Jesus says, "Your brother will rise again." Look at Martha's response. "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." We are too guilty of this church. I happen someday, but not in who Jesus is today. Let's just be honest, in the church, we get our Bibles, and do you know what we do? We read our Bibles and we say, "God was so awesome in the past, wasn't he? All this creation stuff and like the Moses stuff and King David stuff, wasn't God awesome in the past? He was just, He was on fire. He was killing it in the past. God was so amazing in the past, and he certainly was. And then we read the book of Daniel, and we read the book of Revelation, and we say, "You know what? Someday God's gonna do some awesome things. God's got a wonderful future planned, and someday God's really gonna show the world how awesome He is, and God is going to be so awesome in the future and when we do that we're Martha. We can have good theology but theology isn't much good if you don't know Jesus. Huge difference, right? Jack, will you come up here for a second? I'm not gonna embarrass you, I promise. I just want...

    14:04-14:07

This is my friend Jack. Everybody give Jack a warm welcome.

    14:11-14:14

Jack, I'm just gonna write a little theology about you, okay? Where were you born?

    14:14-14:47

You were born a butler? Yeah, I was too. Sorry about that. But you were born a butler. Okay, Jack, what do you like to eat for breakfast? What's like your favorite? Like, if you're like, "I could have anything in the world for breakfast," what would it be? You just drink coffee. No crime in that. You realize I just rolled out an I am statement and you got more amens with your coffee statement. Just a little indicator of the spiritual condition of our church. Okay, Jack, what would you say is like your best talent? Like, you're like, "This is something Not to brag, but this is something that I'm good at, the Lord's blessed me with.

    14:47-14:47

    Hawking?

    14:48-14:52

I know a guy that he's like part owner of some company that does that.

    14:52-14:54

You can watch out for those people.

    14:54-14:55

    I know he's here.

    14:55-14:56

    Yeah, he's here.

    14:56-14:57

All right, what's your favorite movie?

    14:59-15:00

    Step Brothers.

    15:00-15:02

I hope you're watching that on TBS, young man.

    15:03-15:04

All right, thank you very much, Jack.

    15:04-15:06

    See, now...

    15:07-15:08

Now, here's what we did here.

    15:08-15:15

We got a list of some factoids about Jack, because Jack's a really cool guy.

    15:15-15:17

And here we got our factoids.

    15:18-15:26

And you can take these, you can take these little factoids and you can carry them around and you can pull them out and read them and you can memorize them.

    15:27-15:28

    Don't do that, that's weird.

    15:28-15:30

I'm just saying you could do that.

    15:30-15:37

You could take these around and you could think about them and you could read them and you could share them with other people.

    15:38-15:44

"Hey, you know what I learned in church today? Jack Moore drinks coffee for breakfast and that's pretty much it." Now here's what I'm getting at.

    15:45-15:50

All of these things are absolutely true about Jack, because it came straight from Jack's mouth, right?

    15:50-15:58

These things are all true about Jack, but knowing these factoids is way different than knowing Jack.

    15:59-16:00

    It's completely different.

    16:01-16:02

And so it is with Jesus Christ.

    16:02-16:13

For some people, we have our factoids that are true, that we carry around, but knowing about Jesus is not the same as knowing Jesus.

    16:14-16:15

    So here's the thing, Martha's.

    16:16-16:20

Last day stuff, end of the world stuff, that is going to happen.

    16:20-16:27

We went through the book of Revelation here recently, and I believe everything's going to happen the way God laid it out.

    16:27-16:31

Last day stuff will happen, but do not.

    16:32-16:37

sell Jesus short, because He is the "I Am" today.

    16:38-16:50

When Moses wanted to know God's name, and God revealed Himself as the "I Am," and Jesus, again, revealing Himself as the "I Am," do you realize the significance of that?

    16:51-17:01

He didn't say that He's the "I Was." Like, you know, back in the day, you should have seen me back when I was in high school, I was something special.

    17:02-17:15

You can call me the "I was." He's not the "I was." And He's not the "I will be." Like, you know, I'm dieting and exercising and I'm on a program, and someday you should look me up because someday I'm going to be spectacular.

    17:16-17:31

He's not the "I will be." He is the "I am." That's why Hebrews 13:8 says, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Jesus Christ is the "I am" today.

    17:31-17:38

He's just as powerful, He's just as active, He's just as amazing, He's just as awesome as He ever was.

    17:39-17:40

    Do you believe that?

    17:41-17:42

Well, do you pray that way?

    17:42-17:47

Do you call out to Him, trusting that He hears and acts today?

    17:47-17:48

    Do you pray that way?

    17:48-17:55

Do you experience His presence and power and everything He offers you today, right now?

    17:55-18:04

Or have you just taken all of it and you just have this big box that says, "Someday later." And you just throw everything in the "someday later" box.

    18:04-18:12

Someday later, someday later, someday he's going to show himself glorious when he wants to show himself glorious to you today.

    18:13-18:13

    You pray that way?

    18:14-18:17

Because the answer to that will show if you know about Jesus or if you know Jesus.

    18:18-18:20

So knowing Jesus when you're hurting.

    18:21-18:22

    Martha's.

    18:22-18:25

Jesus reminds us that he is present and powerful today.

    18:26-18:29

And number two, knowing Jesus when you're hurting.

    18:30-18:35

Number two, write this down, "He feels your hurt." He feels your hurt.

    18:36-18:38

We're going to pick up in verse 28.

    18:39-18:49

It says, "When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, 'The teacher is here and is calling for you.' And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him.

    18:49-18:54

Now, Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in a place where Martha had met him.

    18:55-19:06

and the Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there.

    19:07-19:17

Now when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Is that sound familiar to anyone?

    19:18-19:22

"Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Where do you think she heard that?

    19:22-19:27

I think they created, what's the term that they use today?

    19:27-19:29

The echo chamber, you know what I'm talking about?

    19:29-19:34

Where you just surround yourself with people saying the same thing because it makes you feel better.

    19:34-19:40

I think they had like this first century echo chamber because Martha and Mary said the exact same thing.

    19:40-19:48

I think they just sat around while Lazarus was sick, while Lazarus died, I think that was the thing they kept saying over and over and over.

    19:49-19:50

You know, if Jesus was here, this wouldn't be happening.

    19:51-19:52

If Jesus was here, where's Jesus?

    19:53-19:55

If Jesus was here, Lazarus would be up.

    19:55-19:55

    He'd be well.

    19:56-19:56

    He'd be better.

    19:56-20:03

If Jesus was here, and like your sister, when Mary encounters Jesus, that's the first thing out of her mouth.

    20:03-20:05

Like, "You've been here." The same words.

    20:06-20:08

But notice with Mary there was weeping.

    20:09-20:10

    This didn't need to happen.

    20:10-20:11

    But look at verse 33.

    20:12-20:25

"When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in His Spirit and greatly troubled." Stop there. When I first read that, I thought this was like a compassionate thing, right?

    20:26-20:36

Like Jesus was like, "Oh, I feel so bad for you." And this might surprise you as it surprised me, but it's not compassion at all.

    20:36-20:44

Every other time "deeply moved" is used in the New Testament, every other time that word is used in the New Testament, it's an angry term.

    20:45-20:50

A better way of saying it is disturbed, but not in the sad way, in the angry way.

    20:50-20:53

It was a word that was used for a snorting horse.

    20:54-21:00

It says he was deeply moved and troubled, and troubled intensifies the emotion of deeply moved.

    21:00-21:04

This is more than just being annoyed.

    21:04-21:07

This is like an angry anguish.

    21:08-21:09

    Over what?

    21:10-21:13

It was over the pain of a fallen world.

    21:13-21:19

Jesus was taking this all in on a level that you and I can't understand.

    21:20-21:21

He was taking this all in.

    21:22-21:40

The curse of sin, death, pain, heartbreak, confusion, despair, unbelief, just the horrible destruction and hurt and pain that crushes the hearts of us all.

    21:40-21:45

He was there and he was feeling the weight of all of this.

    21:46-21:49

    And you're like, "He's Jesus.

    21:49-21:52

Didn't he know this already?" He did.

    21:53-21:55

    But that doesn't eliminate pain.

    21:56-21:59

I would suggest to you that sometimes knowing makes the pain worse.

    22:00-22:03

    This past Wednesday, I dropped...

    22:03-22:14

My son Owen goes to the Watson Institute and at the Watson Institute there are varying degrees of students with whether it's physical or mental disorders, issues.

    22:15-22:16

    It's a wonderful school.

    22:16-22:28

I dropped Owen off and I drove around the loop in the parking lot and I stopped at the crosswalk because I saw a teacher with a student holding his hand, walking him in.

    22:29-22:32

And the dad was behind on the sidewalk.

    22:33-22:41

And I saw this student reach back and he was wailing, he was crying, reaching back for his dad.

    22:42-22:46

And you're like, "Well, what's the big deal with that?" Well, the kid was like 12 or 13.

    22:47-22:51

I mean, it's one thing when you see a toddler do it, first time mom drops him off at daycare.

    22:52-22:57

This was a 12 or 13-year-old kid wailing, reaching back for his dad.

    22:58-23:02

And I got to be honest with you, I just completely broke down.

    23:03-23:05

    I just started weeping.

    23:06-23:11

This whole exchange that I saw there in the parking lot probably lasted about 10 seconds.

    23:12-23:16

But it took my mind to what the rest of their week must be like.

    23:17-23:18

    Because I get it.

    23:19-23:20

    I get that.

    23:21-23:21

    I know.

    23:22-23:23

    And I feel that.

    23:23-23:40

So let me ask you, if such a little thing with my limited perspective broke my heart, what do you think a death of a friend and everything that was going with it at this time, what do you think that did to the heart of God?

    23:41-23:44

What level of knowledge does Jesus Christ have?

    23:44-23:49

I would suggest to you that His knowledge made Him feel it deeper than anyone could.

    23:52-23:58

And he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept.

    23:59-24:10

So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of a blind man also have kept this man from dying?" Jesus wept.

    24:11-24:15

That's a different term than this deeply moved and troubled.

    24:15-24:17

    This is silent breakdown.

    24:18-24:19

    This is tears.

    24:19-24:28

This is, they saw Jesus just completely, emotionally, started weeping, sharing the heartache.

    24:28-24:29

    But again, so much deeper.

    24:31-24:34

Because just as deeper knowledge means worse pain, so does deeper love.

    24:35-24:36

And the deeper the love, the deeper the pain.

    24:37-24:45

I get this, in being a pastor, over the years I've had to do countless "community funerals" we call them.

    24:45-25:03

It's when somebody dies and they don't have a church or a pastor, and they call up and they're like, "Hey, would you do a funeral?" "Yeah, I do." And yes, they're sad, but you have to understand, it's a lot different doing that funeral than when I'm doing the funeral of a family member or somebody that I've known for decades and have loved.

    25:04-25:06

It's at a much deeper level.

    25:07-25:12

And here you have Jesus' personal friends, Lazarus, Mary, Martha.

    25:12-25:16

You know, yeah, you're like, "Okay, but why was he weeping?

    25:16-25:23

Didn't he know he was going to raise him?" Yeah, but knowing doesn't mean not feeling.

    25:23-25:24

    Jesus was not a robot.

    25:26-25:32

I think sometimes we kind of put him in that category, like he knows, so he doesn't feel it.

    25:32-25:38

And this passage in your Bible forever stands as a testimony that God feels.

    25:39-25:41

Yes, he knows, but yes, he feels.

    25:42-25:49

I've often felt at Watson when I drop off Owen, I just want to run up to the people and I want to grab them.

    25:50-25:58

The kids, the parents, I just want to run up, I want to grab them and I want to get in their face and I want to say, "Do you know Jesus said he's going to make all things new?

    25:59-26:05

So this is going to be ancient history someday and everybody's going to be whole and healthy.

    26:05-26:15

Everybody who trusts Christ, do you know how awesome that's going to be?" I know that, and I believe that's true, but it hurts when you see people experiencing pain.

    26:16-26:19

And that's where Jesus was here. He wept.

    26:20-26:22

And that's your big takeaway here, church.

    26:23-26:30

Jesus cares. He cares very deeply. He feels our hurt. It's personal to Him.

    26:30-26:43

For Jesus, it's not just intellectual acknowledgment. Jesus didn't walk into Bethany going, I'm aware that people seem to be sad. It's not just some intellectual acknowledgement.

    26:43-26:55

And it's not sharing a hopelessness. Jesus didn't walk into Bethany and they're like, "Hey, Lazarus died. You should have been here." He's like, "Oh man, what are we going to do?

    26:55-27:39

All hope is gone." That wasn't Jesus either. And it wasn't forced compassion where Jesus thought, "You know, I am the Son of God. I guess I should probably feel something about this. He feels emotion. He deeply cares. And nothing means more to the hurting than having somebody there who cares, true or false. We get that. When somebody passes away, we send cards and we send flowers and we visit the funeral home and we attend the funeral and we take food to the family, and every single act of kindness means so much to the grieving family. Have you ever been there?

    27:40-27:44

God's Word shows us that no one cares more than Jesus cares.

    27:45-27:47

Maybe you're like the crowd at the end.

    27:48-27:49

    They see Jesus weeping.

    27:50-27:56

Some are like, "Look how much He loved them. Look at Him crying. Look how much He loved them." Verse 37.

    27:57-28:02

This is kind of funny because this comment here is like something you'd read on social media.

    28:03-28:09

You know, like, "Jesus weeps," and then somebody has to run in there with their criticizing comments, right?

    28:10-28:23

"Could not He who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?" Maybe you're like the crowd, and you say, "Well, you know, if Jesus cares so much, why doesn't He do something about it?" Get ready.

    28:24-28:30

because we'll see what He did in this instance when we pick up here next week.

    28:31-28:36

Yes, He loves. And yes, He's present and powerful today.

    28:38-28:42

And this is why, in our worst hurt, we run to Jesus.

    28:42-28:43

    Let's pray.

    28:44-28:48

Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word.

    28:48-29:03

But Father, today we thank You specifically for this portion of Your Word, that if we've ever wrestled with the question, "Do you care? Do you care when I hurt?" we forever have a testimony of how you feel when your people hurt.

    29:03-29:06

Father, we thank you for your compassion.

    29:07-29:10

We thank you, God, that you feel what we feel.

    29:10-29:26

And we thank you, God, that even though you know what you're going to do, and how you're going to make all things new, and how you're going to bring perfect justice, even though you know that, God, you still care and you still feel.

    29:26-29:30

Father, we thank you for this glorious revelation of yourself.

    29:31-29:34

And I just ask, Father, that it would help us run to you.

    29:35-29:49

It would help us to trust you, God, that yes, you're going to do some awesome things as outlined in your Word, that's true, God, but let us run to you trusting that you're going to move today, that you are the "I am" today.

    29:50-29:52

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 11:17-37

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Martha believed God would do something big in the future, but not in the present (John 11:24). Have you ever been guilty of that? Why do we sometimes struggle to believe in Jesus’ power today?

  3. Why did Jesus address Mary differently than Martha, even though they both led with the same statement (John 11:21, 32)?

  4. John 11:33 says Jesus was “deeply moved in His spirit and greatly troubled”, an expression that indicated anger and anguish. Why was Jesus feeling these emotions here?

  5. Why did Jesus weep (John 11:35) if He knew what He was going to do? What does this tell you about God?

Open up your Bibles, please, to John 11.

    00:54-00:55

    John 11.

    00:56-01:13

And while you're turning, you know, we've all had those moments in our lives where we have no other statement to make than, "That was random." You know what I'm talking about?

    01:13-01:16

just random moments in our lives.

    01:18-01:24

Probably number one for us, many, many years ago, Aaron and I went to see Rod Stewart in concert.

    01:27-01:28

    I don't know why you're laughing.

    01:30-01:30

    It was great.

    01:31-01:33

Kicks the soccer balls into the crowd.

    01:34-01:35

How many people have seen Rod Stewart in concert?

    01:36-01:38

Okay. All right. Isn't it great?

    01:38-01:40

Yeah, it is great. It is great.

    01:41-01:42

    He's fantastic.

    01:42-01:46

But on the way back, brought us to the important part of the story here.

    01:47-01:53

On the way back we stopped to get gas just up here at the A+ and Cranberry on 19 here, you know.

    01:53-02:03

We had stopped to get gas and while we were pumping the gas, coming north on 19 was this pickup truck.

    02:03-02:06

And it stopped right in front of the gas station, it's right on 19.

    02:06-02:09

And this guy falls out of the back of the pickup.

    02:09-02:13

And Aaron and I are watching this, the guy's laying on the street for a few seconds.

    02:16-02:28

And then all of a sudden, he jumps up, and he runs behind Eaton Park into the night, into the forest.

    02:30-02:30

    Gone!

    02:31-02:51

And Aaron and I just looked at each other, and we were like, "What was that all about?" We were like, "That was so random." "Why are you telling us this story?" Well, here's why I'm telling you this story.

    02:54-02:58

Because sometimes, if we're going to be honest, we encourage honesty here.

    02:59-03:01

Sometimes God seems random to us, doesn't He?

    03:02-03:05

I'm not saying He is random, but let's be honest.

    03:06-03:11

Doesn't it seem sometimes that God is random?

    03:15-03:16

For example, let's talk about prayer.

    03:17-03:18

    Let's talk about healing.

    03:19-03:23

We had an amazing prayer service last week, and I think of prayer services we've had in the past.

    03:24-03:28

I have seen people in this church healed.

    03:30-03:35

Supernaturally, no other explanation than the Lord showed up and brought healing.

    03:35-03:35

    I've seen that.

    03:38-03:44

But some people that we have prayed for in this church have not been healed.

    03:47-03:48

    Why is that?

    03:49-04:00

How can we pray so fervently for this guy and he's healed, and we pay just as fervently, maybe a little more, for this gal and she is not healed.

    04:00-04:04

I mean, that seems kind of random, God, doesn't it?

    04:07-04:11

Back in 2014, we had this betta fish.

    04:11-04:12

We had this fish for years.

    04:14-04:16

I think his name was Marvin the Betta Fish.

    04:16-04:16

    Was his name Marvin?

    04:17-04:26

And he was like floating and his little betta fish gills They were all just spread out, and he was like floating on his side.

    04:29-04:32

My son and I, Kate, we sat down at the table, didn't we?

    04:32-04:33

We prayed for Marvin, and what happened?

    04:35-04:36

    He was healed, wasn't he?

    04:38-04:38

    He was healed!

    04:39-04:41

And he lived for years after that!

    04:41-04:43

He eventually died, but he lived for years!

    04:46-04:52

And I've got to be honest, My prayer for that fish wasn't the most fervent prayer I've ever thrown up to heaven.

    04:56-04:57

    But he was healed.

    04:57-04:59

And you know, I have been fervently praying for my children.

    05:03-05:04

    To not see some healing.

    05:08-05:16

And I'm just like, God, if I can choose one, how about answer the prayer for my son, selfish.

    05:19-05:21

But it just seems random sometimes, doesn't it?

    05:22-05:25

And we're like, wait, wait, wait, didn't God promise to heal?

    05:25-05:29

What about that whole ask, seek, and knock thing that Jesus said?

    05:29-05:32

Everyone who asks receives, everyone who seeks finds, everyone who knocks the door will be opened.

    05:32-05:33

    Remember that?

    05:33-05:40

What about this whole pray expectantly thing that the Bible keeps going over and over and reminding us?

    05:43-05:44

That's what we're going to talk about today.

    05:45-05:48

We're going to talk about the hardest problem that Christians face when we are being honest.

    05:49-05:51

This is the hardest problem for Christians.

    05:53-06:03

What do I do when God does not do what I have been taught to expect Him to do?

    06:06-06:07

    Enter John 11.

    06:10-06:15

We're going to be spending a few weeks on this is arguably Jesus' greatest miracle.

    06:16-06:19

I mean, aside from His own resurrecting from the dead.

    06:19-06:26

Aside from that one, this is the greatest miracle that Jesus performed.

    06:26-06:28

And we're going to take our time and dig in.

    06:29-06:34

But this is the miracle where Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.

    06:34-06:36

    Oh, I'm sorry.

    06:36-06:40

Spoiler alert for those of you You might not be familiar with this story.

    06:43-06:50

But this passage today will forever change the way you view prayer.

    06:53-06:58

You will tune in with me and look at what the Word of God says.

    06:58-07:02

This will forever change the way you view prayer.

    07:05-07:12

You know, when I was a kid, I didn't understand much of what my parents did or said.

    07:16-07:18

    Until I became a parent.

    07:19-07:26

Because as a kid, I only ever saw one perspective, right?

    07:26-07:27

    The kid's perspective.

    07:27-07:30

That was the only perspective I ever saw.

    07:32-08:04

I mean, now I know both sides, kid, I was only on one side of this thing and there was a lot I didn't understand why do my parents do what they did and why did they what did they say what they said and but as a prayer as a prayer we only ever have one perspective right we're like the kid but God like the parent he has a whole different perspective that we usually aren't mindful of.

    08:06-08:13

That's why when we pray, oftentimes we say, "Why God? What are you doing?

    08:13-08:19

What's going on up there? Hello!" We only see the one side.

    08:21-08:31

But, and this is the beautiful thing here, this passage right here that we're looking at that you see God's perspective.

    08:34-08:38

And once you see God's perspective, it changes the way you pray.

    08:39-08:39

    Alright?

    08:41-08:43

So on your outline, let's talk about knowing Jesus' perspective.

    08:45-08:50

Knowing Jesus' perspective, number one, jot this down, we're going to see it very clearly in the text.

    08:51-08:52

    Jesus' perspective.

    08:52-08:58

You're like, "Jesus, we pray for things, but what's Your perspective?" Here's the first thing He would say.

    08:59-09:06

He does say, he did say, he would continue to say, suffering is about seeing Jesus' glory.

    09:09-09:11

Alright, let's look at verses 1 and 2 here together.

    09:13-09:20

It says, "Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

    09:22-09:48

It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair." He's like, "It was that Mary." "Whose brother Lazarus was ill." So here, John just sort of introduces the family, and he clarifies for us, thankfully, which Mary is in the story here.

    09:49-09:53

You know, when you read your Bible, there's a whole bunch of Marys, right?

    09:54-09:55

There's a whole bunch of Marys.

    09:55-10:01

I feel like a mobster when I say that, "A bunch of Marys." a bunch of Marys in Jesus.

    10:01-10:02

Even Jesus' mother, what was her name?

    10:03-10:05

Mary, right? There are a whole lot of Marys.

    10:06-10:09

It's actually a derivative of Miriam from the Old Testament, Moses' sister.

    10:09-10:10

So it was a popular name.

    10:11-10:14

It was like the "empty" word there, right?

    10:14-10:15

    Very popular name.

    10:16-10:21

All the nice Jewish moms were naming their little girls Mary back around that time.

    10:22-10:24

But he says, "Let me tell you which Mary this is.

    10:24-10:28

This is the one who anointed Jesus." And that story comes in chapter 12.

    10:30-10:31

    Spoiler alert there.

    10:31-10:34

But he's just clarifying for us who we're talking about.

    10:34-10:57

Verse 3, it says, "So the sisters sent to Him (Jesus) saying, 'Lord, him who you love is ill.' But when Jesus heard it, He said, His illness does not lead to death.

    10:59-11:00

It is for the glory of God.

    11:03-11:15

"So that the Son of God may be glorified through it." Now, Mary and Martha loved Jesus, but you have to notice, they didn't appeal to Jesus based on their love.

    11:15-11:16

    Did you notice that?

    11:16-11:18

It wasn't like, "Jesus, we love You so much.

    11:18-11:22

Would You do us a favor?" They appealed to Jesus based on His love for Lazarus.

    11:23-11:36

"Hey, you know, the one whom you love, Lazarus, he's ill." Interestingly, the word for love there is the word "phileo," which is the friendship love, like Philadelphia, city of brotherly love.

    11:38-11:39

    The point is this.

    11:40-11:49

Lazarus wasn't some Joe random in the crowd that Jesus bumped into once upon a time, like, "Oh, I think I remember that guy." Lazarus was Jesus' buddy.

    11:50-11:52

    They had a friendship.

    11:53-12:12

And that's why his sisters were like, essentially this message was, "Jesus, your good friend is so sick." He was ill, and likely, Lazarus was already dead by the time Jesus got this message.

    12:15-12:18

Remember, in Jesus' day, there were no cell phones.

    12:19-12:28

or, "Let me just text our Savior a message." Or, "Is Jesus on Facebook? Let's send him a Facebook message through Messenger." They didn't have that.

    12:28-12:30

How did you get a message to somebody?

    12:30-12:33

You had to send a guy to go there.

    12:33-12:35

It would have taken a day or two.

    12:35-12:38

And I'm not going to get into all the timeline stuff.

    12:38-12:45

I'm just saying there's a very high percentage chance that Lazarus was already dead by the time Jesus got this message.

    12:46-12:50

And if not, you're going to see, about to die very soon.

    12:53-12:55

But notice the message they gave Jesus.

    12:55-12:56

    There were no instructions.

    12:56-12:57

    There were no demands.

    13:00-13:04

But the fact that they sent the message means that they wanted Jesus to know.

    13:06-13:14

And based on verses 21 and 32 that we'll look at down the road, it's obvious they were expecting Jesus to show up.

    13:16-13:17

Okay? We can safely say that.

    13:20-13:28

Sometimes people want to believe that sickness is never the will of God.

    13:31-13:37

And when you look at this passage, we see that that's just not true.

    13:40-13:43

Because for Lazarus, his sickness wasn't the result of sin.

    13:44-13:49

Lazarus' sickness wasn't a result of a lack of faith.

    13:49-13:52

Look at verse 4 again. Why was he sick?

    13:54-14:11

Jesus said, "It is for the glory of God." Jesus very clearly said, "The purpose." Please hear this. So many people miss this.

    14:12-14:17

Jesus said the purpose of Lazarus being sick was the glory of God.

    14:19-14:24

And you're like, wait a second, Jeff, hold on a second.

    14:25-14:27

You're telling me the glory of God.

    14:28-14:30

You're telling me that's the goal of sickness, right?

    14:31-14:35

You're telling me here this morning, the goal of sickness is the glory of God.

    14:38-14:39

    That's the goal of everything.

    14:42-14:44

The glory of God is the goal of everything.

    14:46-14:49

For example, the money that you spend, what's the purpose?

    14:50-14:51

    The glory of God.

    14:51-14:54

Your marriage, what's the purpose of your marriage, married people?

    14:55-14:56

It's about the glory of God.

    14:56-14:57

    What about how you parent?

    14:58-14:59

Why do you parent the way you parent?

    15:00-15:02

For the glory of God, right?

    15:02-15:03

What's the purpose of the church?

    15:04-15:05

    The glory of God.

    15:05-15:06

    Do you see a theme?

    15:08-15:09

    That's the goal of everything.

    15:11-15:18

The greatest thing that we can do on this earth without exception is to glorify God.

    15:19-15:34

The greatest thing we will experience on this earth without exception is to see God's glory; to see His worthiness; to see His power; to see His beauty.

    15:37-15:43

It's the goal of God, It's the greatest blessing that we can experience.

    15:45-16:12

Like, "Okay, Jeff, I'm sold on the whole 'glory of God's important,' but in trials, in sickness and in death, you're telling me that these things are to be used for the glory of God?" And I would just ask you, what was the greatest way God glorified His name while He was on this earth.

    16:13-16:14

    What was the greatest way?

    16:15-16:16

Shout it out if you think you know.

    16:18-16:20

    His death and resurrection, right?

    16:21-16:28

It was through suffering that God manifested His glory in the greatest possible way.

    16:28-16:34

And I want you to think about the death of Jesus Christ and His resurrection.

    16:36-16:41

That event demonstrated to us everything about God.

    16:42-16:43

    It showed us His power.

    16:43-16:44

    It showed us His sovereignty.

    16:45-16:46

    It showed us His grace.

    16:47-16:48

And it showed us His love.

    16:48-16:50

And I can go on and on and on.

    16:50-16:55

But that event told us everything we need to know about the character of our God.

    16:57-16:59

Like, well, what did it do for us?

    17:02-17:02

    It's given us everything.

    17:06-17:06

    in the life.

    17:07-17:08

    Fellowship in the church.

    17:09-17:09

    The promise of heaven.

    17:10-17:11

The power of the Holy Spirit.

    17:11-17:12

    Adoption as children of God.

    17:13-17:14

    Being co-heirs of all things.

    17:16-17:17

    And I could go on.

    17:20-17:37

So when we say suffering is about seeing Jesus' glory, I would even expand on that a bit to say this, glory in suffering - to manifest His presence on the earth.

    17:40-17:48

So sickness and death - you can't look at sickness as some roadblock to seeing God's glory.

    17:50-17:54

According to Jesus, it's a gateway.

    17:57-18:01

And this little section alone, I could stop right here.

    18:01-18:03

I'm not going to. Don't get excited.

    18:05-18:06

I've got a whole extra hour I'm working with this week.

    18:08-18:11

But this right here should change how we pray for the sick.

    18:14-18:15

How do we typically pray for sick people?

    18:17-18:19

"Please heal. Please heal. Please heal.

    18:19-18:22

Please heal Grandma. Please heal Becky.

    18:22-18:24

Please heal Karen. Please heal Sam.

    18:25-18:28

Please heal. Please heal. Please heal. Please heal." And look, there's nothing wrong with that.

    18:30-18:32

    We should pray that.

    18:33-18:34

    Absolutely.

    18:35-18:43

But I've got to tell you, that's kind of the elementary school way of praying for the sick.

    18:46-18:47

Yes, pray that, but pray more.

    18:51-18:52

Here's how I pray for the sick.

    18:52-18:54

And I get the prayer requests every week.

    18:54-18:59

And I'm telling you, when you submit, "Hey, so-and-so is sick," I'm going to tell you exactly how I pray for that person.

    19:00-19:06

I say, "Lord, please heal this person in a way that brings maximum glory to You." That's how I pray.

    19:06-19:22

God, if You're using this person to draw people to You, whether it's some doctor or nurse in the hospital, or some visiting family from out of town coming, or some neighbor that's watching the Lord at work in this situation, God, use that to bring people to You.

    19:23-19:24

    So yes, heal.

    19:26-19:30

But I've got to tell you, when we're just stuck on Please heal, please heal, please heal.

    19:30-19:31

    We're so focused on us.

    19:33-19:34

And who should we be focused on?

    19:35-19:36

We should be focused on God!

    19:37-19:50

So instead of God, it's about us and our healing and making us comfortable and feel good, we need to look at this sickness as an opportunity to say, "God, look, right here, you have the opportunity to showcase your glory." And that's what we're praying for, God.

    19:50-20:00

Show up in a way that people have no other choice than to say, "That was God. That was God." There's no explanation other than God Almighty showed up here.

    20:00-20:02

I want to know that God.

    20:02-20:05

That is praying for God's glory and sickness.

    20:05-20:13

And that is so much greater than "please heal Becky." Yes, God, heal Becky.

    20:14-20:16

But do it in a way that glorifies Your name.

    20:17-20:19

Suffering is about seeing Jesus' glory.

    20:21-20:28

Number two, Just in case number one wasn't a hard enough pill to swallow.

    20:30-20:32

But you see in the text, don't you?

    20:32-20:33

    Look at number two.

    20:33-20:36

Delaying is an act of love.

    20:40-20:42

Delaying is an act of love.

    20:45-20:47

    Let's look at verses 5 and 6.

    20:48-20:59

It says, "Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus." So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

    21:02-21:04

And I'm sure that was a relief for the disciples, right?

    21:06-21:11

You know, it's a nice change of pace being somewhere where you don't have mobs constantly trying to kill Jesus.

    21:14-21:43

And then after this, He, Jesus, said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." "Excuse me? What?" Verse 8, "The disciples said to Him, 'Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?'" What? Hang on a second, Jesus.

    21:43-21:44

We just got out of there.

    21:46-21:54

Because you had people literally - we talked about this - stones in the hand, I'm going to pelt you with them until you're dead.

    21:54-21:56

We literally just left that scene.

    21:56-21:58

And now you want to go back to those people?

    22:02-22:05

They were baffled as they often were.

    22:06-22:15

as we often are, because God's timing never seems to match our expectations.

    22:19-22:22

But this shows us that Jesus didn't leave Judea out of fear.

    22:22-22:23

    He wasn't afraid.

    22:24-22:25

Or He never would have gone back.

    22:26-22:27

    Look at His response.

    22:28-22:29

    Verses 9 and 10.

    22:32-22:35

"Jesus answered her, 'They're not twelve hours in the day.

    22:36-22:40

If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.

    22:41-22:44

But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because the light is not in him.

    22:46-22:54

Jesus said, "Aren't there 12 hours in a day?" And you're like, "Hang on a second, there's a lot more than 12 hours in a day." That's not what He's talking about.

    22:54-23:00

He's talking about the 12 hours being the time allotted for activity.

    23:00-23:05

You roughly have, every day, about 12 hours of daylight to work.

    23:06-23:10

And the question is, that Jesus is driving home here, can you extend that?

    23:12-23:13

    Can you extend daylight time?

    23:14-23:18

Like if you're out working in your yard, you'll be like, "Oh, you know, I need another hour.

    23:19-23:23

I'm just going to go turn the dial and keep the sun up for another hour." Can you do that?

    23:25-23:30

Or like me, you have days that you're like, "Bedtime can't come soon enough.

    23:31-23:34

We're going to knock a couple hours off of the sunlight.

    23:34-23:41

I'm going to turn the dial, and we're going to turn the lights off, and everybody's going to bed two hours early, because quite frankly, I'm done dealing with all y'all.

    23:41-23:42

    Can you do that?

    23:43-23:45

As much as you'd like to, can you do that?

    23:46-23:46

    No.

    23:49-23:51

That's what Jesus is saying here on God's agenda.

    23:53-24:01

Time can't be shortened by your enemies, and time can't be lengthened by taking precautions.

    24:01-24:05

Jesus was saying, "Look guys, I'm on a 12-hour shift, and nothing is going to change that.

    24:06-24:07

No one's going to make me leave early.

    24:08-24:12

No one's going to make me stay longer." Look at verse 11.

    24:13-24:32

It says, "After saying these things, He said to them, 'Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.' The disciples said to Him, 'Lord, if he has fallen asleep, He will recover.

    24:33-24:39

Now Jesus had spoken of His death, but they thought that He meant taking rest and sleep.

    24:40-24:41

Let's stop there for a second.

    24:42-24:44

    Jesus said, "Lazarus is asleep.

    24:44-24:47

I'm going to wake him up." And it's just kind of funny to me.

    24:47-24:56

The disciples were like, "You understand, Lord, that being asleep is not really a very serious health condition, right?

    24:57-25:09

"How about we just mail him an alarm clock?" And Jesus told them plainly, verse 14, "Then Jesus told them plainly, 'Lazarus has died.

    25:11-25:20

And for your sake, I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe.

    25:22-25:26

Let us go to him.'" Okay, so Jesus spells it out.

    25:28-25:29

    Lazarus has died.

    25:29-25:32

And right now you're asking the same question that I asked.

    25:33-25:33

    Wait, wait, wait.

    25:34-25:45

Verse 4, Jesus said this illness wasn't going to lead to death, and now Jesus said, "Lazarus has died." Now, it's the same message.

    25:46-25:49

Jesus was saying this isn't going to lead to death ultimately.

    25:49-25:50

That's why He called it sleep.

    25:51-26:15

Jesus was saying, "I'm going to go wake him up from the dead." And he says, "Oh, and by the way, I'm glad I wasn't there for your sake, so that you may believe." So Jesus said this whole event that was taking place, the purpose was to strengthen Mary and Martha's faith, to strengthen the disciples' faith, and to strengthen our faith.

    26:16-26:24

But I want you to look back at verses 5 and 6 with me, because these verses, they just don't go together.

    26:25-26:26

Look at verses 5 and 6.

    26:26-26:31

It says, "Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus." Okay, you got that part?

    26:32-26:35

Interestingly, the word "love" here is agape.

    26:35-26:39

That's the self-sacrificing love, the "you before me" kind of love.

    26:40-26:43

"Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

    26:45-27:02

So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, I would expect the next statement to be, "Jesus tied on his running shoes, and he got there right quick." But that's not what it says.

    27:03-27:09

It says when he heard Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

    27:11-27:18

By the way, verse 6 where it says "so," can also be translated "therefore." So try to wrap your brain around this with me if you can.

    27:21-27:23

    Jesus, your good buddy's sick.

    27:25-27:37

And the Bible says Jesus was like, "Well, because I'm sick so much, I'm going to wait a couple of days." That's just not how it works, Jesus!

    27:38-27:43

I mean, when we hear somebody's sick, When we think emergency, what do we typically think of, right?

    27:44-27:46

Critical illnesses. There's lights. There's sirens.

    27:47-27:49

It's rushing around. It's everybody in emergency mode.

    27:50-27:52

Hurry up! We've got to get this person taken care of.

    27:52-28:01

And Jesus' response is, "We're just going to hang out here for a couple of days." That's not how we do it!

    28:04-28:05

    That's how Jesus did it.

    28:09-28:10

You know, their message to Jesus?

    28:10-28:12

I was thinking about this a lot this week.

    28:12-28:17

They sent this message to Jesus, and you know, that message to Jesus was almost like praying.

    28:19-28:19

    Right?

    28:20-28:23

Because they sent the message, and they're kind of waiting to hear back.

    28:23-28:24

So wasn't that message kind of like a prayer?

    28:25-28:26

    Sure it was.

    28:28-28:30

And they didn't hear back right away.

    28:32-28:35

And I have to wonder, did they question Jesus' knowledge?

    28:37-28:38

I thought he knew all things.

    28:40-28:42

He had to know how sick our brother is.

    28:44-28:45

    Did they question Jesus' power?

    28:48-28:52

I thought he could do something about this.

    28:54-28:55

    Did they question Jesus' love?

    28:57-29:03

Well Mary and Martha, they didn't know that Jesus was delaying.

    29:04-29:05

    They didn't know that.

    29:06-29:10

And I wonder if they ask the same questions that we often ask while we wait.

    29:10-29:11

    Why isn't He here?

    29:12-29:14

Does Jesus have something more important to do?

    29:14-29:15

    Doesn't He love us?

    29:16-29:17

    I mean, the Bible's clear.

    29:17-29:18

    Yes, He loved them.

    29:22-29:23

    But why wasn't He there?

    29:26-29:31

Did you ever cry out to God to seemingly no response?

    29:32-29:33

    Anybody?

    29:34-29:39

You may even cry out to God desperately, and it just seems to you like the answer was silence.

    29:40-29:41

Has that ever happened to anybody?

    29:42-29:48

That you're like, "God, I need Your help so bad!" And there's no answer.

    29:52-29:56

And we're left to feel like prayer isn't working.

    29:59-29:59

    Prayer isn't working.

    30:02-30:21

I'm going to tell you, we've had some, for the last three years in our family, we've had some physiological issues with our son that has resulted in adrenaline surges, which has resulted in violence.

    30:24-30:25

    It's horrific.

    30:27-30:45

And the one day, this was, I want to say, A couple months ago, this particular episode, I was here at work, and I get a call, "You've got to get home now." And I remember jumping in the car and racing home, praying as I went.

    30:48-30:56

But this wasn't a very warm and fuzzy prayer that I was offering to God.

    30:57-31:06

It just wasn't like, "Oh dear Lord, bestow us upon us Thy bountiful blessing." It wasn't that kind of prayer.

    31:08-31:08

    You know what I prayed?

    31:11-31:16

I said, "God, You see what's happening! I know You see this!

    31:17-31:21

How can You see what's happening and not do something about it?

    31:22-31:23

    How could you do that?

    31:26-31:32

And suddenly, I find myself right here with Mary and Martha.

    31:32-31:34

    Our brother's on his deathbed!

    31:35-31:35

    And where are you?

    31:36-31:43

Jesus is like, "I'm just going to hang out here for a couple days." Because I love them.

    31:45-31:50

Because I know that this is going to ultimately strengthen them.

    31:53-31:56

Because so often we think that God's delay means God's denial.

    31:59-32:04

But according to Jesus, delaying is a sign of love.

    32:08-32:11

Because it's to make us stronger in our faith.

    32:14-32:16

This is a hard sell, talking about delaying.

    32:17-32:18

    It's a hard sell, I know that.

    32:19-32:20

Because we live in a day of instant.

    32:21-32:46

We live in a day where we stand in front of the microwave and say, "What's taking this stupid thing so long?" We live in a day, people send me YouTube videos, like, "Hey, you gotta watch this song, "you gotta watch this testimony, "you gotta check this thing out, "you gotta watch this guy falling down the stairs," or whatever, and I'll click on it, and it'll say, "Video will play after this ad, five seconds." I'm like, "Not me." Guess I'm never going to know what happened to that guy.

    32:48-32:49

Because we don't wait for nothing.

    32:52-33:11

But suffering doesn't negate God's love and delaying doesn't negate God's love because according to Jesus' perspective that the Lord has given us in His Word, suffering is for God's glory and the delay is an act of love to strengthen our faith while we wait on Him.

    33:12-33:14

    How can that be?

    33:16-33:19

Because our greatest need - here it is - our greatest need is not healing.

    33:20-33:24

No matter how much you think that in the moment, your greatest need is not healing.

    33:24-33:32

Your greatest need always, every time, is to know Jesus Christ and all His glory.

    33:32-33:33

    That's your need.

    33:33-33:40

That's why this whole series that we're in is called "Knowing Jesus." That is what we are going after because there is nothing more important.

    33:42-33:58

So if our greatest need is knowing Jesus and seeing Him in His glory, then the greatest act of love that anybody could ever bestow on another is helping people see the glory of Jesus Christ.

    33:59-34:05

And sometimes that means Jesus will delay in His work in order to make that happen.

    34:07-34:09

    That's what your Bible says.

    34:11-34:31

Right now somebody's sitting here or somebody's watching the stream here going, "That's awfully hard to believe." It is. It is hard to believe, especially when you're in the middle of it.

    34:34-34:37

But right now, we're going to close here.

    34:37-34:42

Right now, if this is you, that you're like, "Jeff, okay, I see what the Bible says.

    34:42-35:01

I believe the Bible, but that's not really gelling with my experience at the moment, and I'm having a hard time subscribing to this." Well, if that's you, you're about to get the best advice from the most unlikely source.

    35:02-35:03

    You ready? I love this.

    35:03-35:04

And this should be highlighted in your Bible.

    35:04-35:06

Look at the last verse for today.

    35:06-35:24

Verse 16, "So Thomas, called the twin, said to his fellow disciples, 'Let us also go, that we may die with him.'" So jot this down, last thing in your outline.

    35:25-35:35

If you're struggling right now with all of this stuff that the Bible so clearly teaches and that I'm trying my best to communicate to you, He wrote this down.

    35:36-35:44

"I follow Jesus even when my faith is weak." "I follow Jesus even when my faith is weak." You know, Thomas.

    35:44-35:45

    Oh, Thomas.

    35:47-35:48

    Thomas, you twin you.

    35:50-35:53

I did a lot of reading this week about Thomas.

    35:53-35:56

Some people called Thomas the courageous pessimist.

    35:56-36:01

And some people described Thomas as having loyal unbelief.

    36:04-36:07

Some people, frankly, would just call Thomas the Debbie Downer.

    36:08-36:18

Like Jesus is like, "We're going to Judea!" And Thomas is like, "Wah, wah. We're going to die with Jesus." You know what I call Thomas?

    36:20-36:21

    Tremendous example.

    36:22-36:23

    Let me tell you why.

    36:26-36:34

for Thomas, this is when hopelessness is admirable.

    36:36-36:39

Like, whoa, okay, you lost me here.

    36:39-36:41

How is Thomas such a great example?

    36:41-36:42

    I'm gonna tell you why.

    36:42-36:45

Because so often we end up like Thomas.

    36:45-36:46

    We are completely hopeless.

    36:48-36:51

And we hear the clear words of Jesus and we disregard them.

    36:51-36:53

And we say, "I don't believe them right now.

    36:53-36:59

"I don't see it." Jesus, quite frankly, I don't like what you're doing.

    37:02-37:09

But Thomas is the example of where we need to land when our faith is struggling.

    37:11-37:13

I'm not optimistic at the moment.

    37:15-37:19

But I'm going with Jesus even if it kills me.

    37:20-37:21

    That's where Thomas was.

    37:24-37:26

I love the fact that he roped in the other disciples.

    37:26-37:43

It wasn't just like, "This is my thing." Do you notice he said to his disciples, "Let us go." He's like, "Hey guys, we might not be on board with Jesus right now, but that is not going to stop us from following Him." And you know what?

    37:43-37:45

For a lot of people, it does stop them.

    37:46-37:49

Because so many people at this point just bail.

    37:49-37:50

    "I'm done going to church.

    37:51-37:52

I'm done going to small group.

    37:52-37:53

    I'm done reading my Bible.

    37:54-37:58

I'm done praying. I'm done hoping. I'm done caring.

    38:01-38:09

I just want to close by asking you, can you still follow Jesus even if you aren't hopeful at the moment?

    38:12-38:16

Can you still follow Jesus even if you aren't fully on board with His plan?

    38:20-38:26

Are you still willing to follow Jesus You don't see how He's going to use this thing for His glory.

    38:27-38:30

You can't understand why in the world He is delaying.

    38:31-38:32

    Can you still follow Jesus?

    38:34-38:35

    I don't get it.

    38:35-38:36

    I don't like it.

    38:39-38:40

But I'm going to follow Him.

    38:41-38:43

No matter how discouraged I feel right now.

    38:45-38:51

I think this would be a great time to pray that for us.

    38:52-38:54

Bow with me please as the worship team comes forward.

    38:56-39:09

Father in Heaven, Your Word, Father, has some things that are hard for our fallen, human, finite minds to wrap.

    39:10-39:12

We just can't fathom some of these things, God.

    39:13-39:15

And I'm not even talking about creation or the Trinity or anything like that.

    39:15-39:23

But sometimes we get to a passage like this, It's hard to think that sickness is for Your glory or You delay because You love us.

    39:23-39:29

That just doesn't feel right sometimes.

    39:32-39:36

God, I pray for my brothers and sisters here, and I pray for myself.

    39:38-39:50

Father, we would follow Thomas' example When things aren't looking great, we're still willing to follow Jesus Christ.

    39:52-40:07

Because I know right now, that if we could bring Thomas to the stage, tell him to give testimony, he would tell us that it was well worth following Jesus Christ, even when it didn't make sense.

    40:08-40:13

that He got to see a resurrected Savior.

    40:17-40:20

Father, I ask that You strengthen our faith.

    40:22-40:31

But I ask, Father, that You would give us a determination to follow You even when our faith is weak.

    40:34-40:36

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 11:1-16

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Explain how illness can be for the glory of God (John 11:4). What does that mean? How does that look?

  3. Read John 11:5-6 again. Why was “staying two days longer” actually an expression of Jesus' love?

  4. Though Thomas seemed to display some unbelief (John 11:16), explain what was commendable about his statement / attitude. What does this teach you, when your faith isn't where it needs to be?
