Open up your Bibles with me please to John chapter 17, as we continue our series, "Knowing Jesus." This past week I lost a very good friend, who passed away last Sunday night about 11.30.

    01:11-01:18

And he was a man who, he attended our church before, but he was a member of another church, and he actually worked in this building.

    01:19-01:42

And one day, about, I want to say, three years ago or so, he just showed up at my office, and he's like, "You're a pastor, right?" I'm like, "Yeah." He's like, "Will you pray with me?" I'm like, "Yeah." And from that day, every day that we were both here in the building, he would meet with me for prayer.

    01:42-01:56

And there were times he'd say, "Can we go pray in the chapel?" and he bought a mat, and he would kneel right here, and I would kneel over here, and we would spend an extended time together crying out to the Lord.

    01:57-02:07

And this man would pray for our families, he would pray for our churches, he would pray for the president, the governor, and the local leaders.

    02:08-02:10

    And he would pray weeping.

    02:10-02:23

And for him it wasn't just a matter of saying your prayers, You know, "God bless Grandma, traveling mercies, be with me today, Amen." That prayer time was prayer time.

    02:25-02:34

And you know, I got to know him pretty well over the last three years, because you can learn a lot by a person by the way they pray, right?

    02:37-02:45

And that's never more on display than it is in the life of our Lord when we get to John chapter 17, because we have this insight.

    02:45-02:49

This is the only extended prayer of Jesus in the Bible.

    02:50-02:59

And we see examples of Him praying, but this is the only example where we get insight to what He is praying in extended prayer time.

    03:00-03:06

We knew He was constantly in prayer, but here we get a glimpse, right?

    03:07-03:15

And the main thing that Jesus was praying for, where we started this last week, the main thing Jesus was praying for was for the Father's glory.

    03:16-03:22

And it's my hope as we go through this prayer that we would grow as prayers ourselves.

    03:24-03:34

Because knowing Jesus - which is our theme - knowing Jesus should include us knowing how to pray for the things that Jesus prayed for.

    03:34-04:01

And last week, we saw Jesus prayed for authentic disciples - of God. Jesus prayed that we would be protected from the world that hates us because it hated him and from the evil one, the devil, and Jesus prayed that we would be sanctified by the Word. In other words, used by God, being set apart by the Word of God.

    04:02-04:14

And you have to see when we get to verse 20 that Jesus, his prayer originally in the last for the eleven disciples, and they were principles for us.

    04:14-04:20

But here, Jesus' prayer is for you specifically, not you generally.

    04:21-04:23

Jesus is praying for you specifically.

    04:23-04:26

Look at verse 20, Jesus continuing His prayer.

    04:26-04:30

He says, "I do not ask for these only," meaning these apostles.

    04:30-04:46

"I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word." as those apostles go out and preach and ultimately record the Word of God, there are going to be people that come to faith in Christ through their ministry.

    04:46-04:57

And Jesus says, "Okay, now I'm praying for them. Now He's praying for us here." This is a statement that covers a couple of thousand years.

    04:57-05:04

And it's a statement that covers how many millions of people through those couple of thousands of years.

    05:04-05:11

At all times, every age, every culture, Jesus is praying for people who weren't even yet born.

    05:11-05:19

Like, okay, so Jesus is praying for us, and we should be praying for us the same things that Jesus was praying for us.

    05:20-05:26

So on your outline, knowing his prayer, what Jesus wants for you.

    05:28-05:29

Alright, so write this down first of all.

    05:29-05:42

Number one, or if you were here last week, you can write number four, because this is an extension of the same message from last week.

    05:42-05:43

I broke it up into two parts.

    05:43-05:44

    Say thank you.

    05:45-05:46

    You're welcome.

    05:47-05:55

But if you're here for the first time, it can be number one for you if you're here last week, number four, if you wanna build off of last week's.

    05:56-05:58

Number one, he wants you to be unified.

    05:59-06:00

He wants you to be unified.

    06:01-06:02

    Look at verse 21.

    06:04-06:29

Jesus says, again praying for us specifically, "That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in Me, and I in you, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me, the glory that You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, even as we are one.

    06:30-06:44

I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me." He wants you to be unified.

    06:44-06:45

    Did you notice?

    06:45-06:51

Three times in just those couple of verses, Jesus was praying, "They may be one.

    06:52-06:53

Father, that they may be one.

    06:53-06:54

    You and I are one.

    06:54-06:59

I want them to be one." We're talking about spiritual union.

    07:00-07:03

You see, the Father and the Son share life.

    07:05-07:14

And believers in Christ share the same life that is in the Father and the Son, because the life of the Son is in us.

    07:14-07:22

But in v. 22, Jesus says, "The glory You've given Me, I've given to them." What is He talking about?

    07:24-07:29

What is this glory that He was given that was given to us?

    07:30-07:35

You're like, "Jeff, what is that?" And the question is not what is that, the question is who is that?

    07:35-07:36

Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit.

    07:37-07:50

The Bible says that Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit, right, like Luke 4, verse one, for example, many other places, meaning Jesus literally had all of the attributes of God.

    07:50-07:55

And in giving us the Spirit of God, We share those attributes.

    07:56-07:58

That's what Jesus was talking about back in chapter 15.

    07:59-08:02

I am the vine, you are the branches.

    08:02-08:05

Abide in me because apart from me you can do nothing.

    08:05-08:07

    It's the exact same concept.

    08:07-08:10

It's the same life flowing through, right?

    08:10-08:12

    That's what he's talking about.

    08:13-08:15

And this is what he's praying for.

    08:16-08:18

He's praying for unity for the church.

    08:18-08:20

    He's praying for oneness.

    08:22-08:24

Let's talk about oneness for a couple of minutes here.

    08:24-08:25

    What is oneness?

    08:25-08:28

Well, I wanna tell you what it's not.

    08:29-08:31

Don't you love it when preachers do that?

    08:32-08:33

    Like, well, what is it?

    08:33-08:34

Well, I'm gonna tell you what it's not.

    08:34-08:35

Well, I'm not here to know what it's not.

    08:36-08:37

You have to know what it's not so you know what it is, right?

    08:38-08:40

    But it's not ecumenical.

    08:40-08:48

Many years ago, I was part of a group of churches and religious organizations that were doing this community outreach thing.

    08:48-08:57

And one of the people that was involved in organizing it said, "Look, we just gotta get the kids together, and we gotta do good things for the community.

    08:58-09:13

So look, praise Jesus, praise whoever, it doesn't matter so long as we take care of the kids." I was like, "Whoa." I said, "I'm really not comfortable with the concept of praise Jesus, praise whoever.

    09:14-09:21

I'm just not comfortable with that." But you see, some people think that's what Jesus meant by oneness.

    09:22-09:23

Like, "Look, we all get along.

    09:24-09:28

Look at those churches and mosques and synagogues and Mormon temples.

    09:28-09:34

They're all getting along just like Jesus prayed for, they're all one." And some people think that that's oneness.

    09:35-09:36

    We just all get along.

    09:37-09:38

That's not what he's talking about.

    09:39-09:41

And some people think it's uniformity.

    09:41-09:49

Like, look, we should just get rid of every denomination and brand and flavor of Christianity and all be uniform.

    09:50-09:51

And He's not talking about that either.

    09:53-09:55

He's talking about a oneness of holiness.

    09:56-09:58

He's talking about being pure and holy.

    09:59-10:01

He's talking about being set apart.

    10:02-10:12

He's talking about, because we are not of this world, we are citizens of heaven, that identity is the thing that should unify us and set us apart.

    10:13-10:21

You're like, "Well, what does that look like?" If you've been with us through any chunk of this sermon series, through John, we've seen what that looks like.

    10:22-10:25

Because there's a oneness that Jesus brings up here in this passage.

    10:25-10:27

There's a oneness that exists between Him and the Father.

    10:28-10:28

    Right?

    10:30-10:40

Jesus and God the Father, they had the same authority, they do the same works, they have the same will, they preach the same doctrine, they have the same glory, They're both sinless.

    10:41-10:51

They have this unity exist between the Father and the Son, and Jesus here is praying that His people are brought into that unity.

    10:51-10:56

"God, I want them to be part of this!" That's what He's praying for.

    10:57-11:05

You're like, "Well, why?" Well you probably noticed verses 21 and 23 are very similar verses.

    11:06-11:10

There's in general three parts of these verses.

    11:10-11:13

Jesus prayed about the Father being in Jesus.

    11:13-11:16

Jesus talked about the Father and Jesus being in us.

    11:18-11:23

And in both verses, he says so that the world believes, so that the world knows.

    11:24-11:32

And he said, "What's the purpose of unity?" The purpose of unity, church, is seeing people saved.

    11:32-11:33

    Jesus made it very clear.

    11:34-11:36

The purpose of our oneness, he said it twice.

    11:36-11:41

The purpose of our oneness is so that the world sees the oneness we have with each other and with God.

    11:42-11:50

And they're like, "Jesus Christ must be real, because look at how He changed those people." That's what He's talking about.

    11:51-11:53

Convincing the world that Jesus is God.

    11:54-11:57

And it's not merely unity for the sake of unity.

    11:57-11:58

    Let's just all get along.

    11:59-12:01

It's unity for the sake of evangelism.

    12:02-12:08

the world sees oneness, the world sees set-apartness, and the world is attracted to that.

    12:10-12:14

You're like, "Well, how does that work?" Have you ever read the Gospels?

    12:15-12:16

Have you ever read the Gospels?

    12:17-12:23

I would ask you, "What made Zacchaeus climb that tree?" You're like, "Oh, because he was short." Okay, smart aleck.

    12:25-12:27

What made Zacchaeus climb that tree?

    12:28-12:34

What drove the disciples to leave their jobs and their families to follow some Jewish rabbi?

    12:35-12:35

    Why?

    12:37-12:48

What made Nicodemus come at night to understand who this Jesus of Nazareth was?

    12:49-13:10

What was the draw - and I could go on and on, but I won't - what was the draw With all of these people pursuing this Jesus, people could see that he had a oneness with God that made him stand out from the rest of the world.

    13:11-13:15

And when you read your gospels, you see people flocked to that.

    13:16-13:20

This guy is not like anybody who's ever walked on the earth.

    13:20-13:21

I gotta see who he is.

    13:22-13:25

He has a oneness with God.

    13:25-13:26

I've got to know more about this.

    13:27-13:29

And Jesus is saying, "This is what I want for my church.

    13:30-13:43

Stand out in holiness, united, that the world will look at our unity and say, 'Jesus must save, Jesus must change.' That church isn't just some religious club.

    13:44-13:45

    Those people are different.

    13:46-13:47

    It's a holy oneness.

    13:50-13:51

    It's a holy oneness.

    13:52-13:53

That's what he's calling us to.

    13:54-14:01

And this is just a point of church life and doctrine and practice that just gets so messed up.

    14:02-14:08

This past May, the Evangelical Lutheran Church elected the first transgender pastor.

    14:09-14:15

And we're seeing more and more and more and more churches getting woke to such things.

    14:16-14:17

    And what does that communicate?

    14:18-14:25

You see, for the people on that side, it communicates this makes us look relevant.

    14:26-14:27

This makes us look real, right?

    14:27-14:29

    We're relevant with our culture.

    14:29-14:31

We're up with the times, we're woke like you.

    14:32-14:33

    We're accepting, right?

    14:34-14:37

That's what they think it communicates.

    14:38-14:40

You know, doesn't this make us look relevant?

    14:42-14:42

    No.

    14:43-14:48

It makes you look unholy, is what it makes you look like.

    14:49-14:57

Because what happens is the world, whether they want to articulate it or not, whether they even want to admit it or not, deep down they know it's true.

    14:57-15:00

When the world sees that garbage, they know!

    15:02-15:15

When they look at this church doing such wickedness, the world's like, "Okay, what I'm seeing is a mix of holiness and unholiness at the same time." They're hypocrites. They're hypocrites.

    15:16-15:22

Because I know a sense of what the book says, and these people aren't even living by their own book.

    15:23-15:25

That's what the world sees. Hypocrisy.

    15:28-15:31

And church, I hear it all the time. I heard it last week.

    15:32-15:36

Last week, from a friend who doesn't go to church.

    15:37-15:47

You know, I grew up, I went to a church growing up, and a bunch of bad stuff went down, and the pastor was having an affair, and these people were fighting, And that's why I don't want anything to do with church.

    15:48-15:49

You ever hear somebody like that?

    15:51-15:55

I'm sure everyone in this room and everybody watching this stream has heard or knows somebody like that.

    15:56-16:04

That the church has ruined the testimony of holiness and oneness because we don't act according to how we say we should believe.

    16:05-16:07

And shame on us for that.

    16:08-16:45

Before we start pointing fingers at churches with, You know transgender pastors or rainbow flags look look we're not exempt in this church Okay, we can be just as guilty claiming to be Christian, but living an unholy lifestyle And when we do that Whatever our favorite sin is in our churches when we do that what we communicate to the world is the gospel is not effective It's either a scam or a sham, but Jesus Christ ain't really changing people down at that place is what we communicate.

    16:47-16:50

Because the gospel ultimately is about transformation.

    16:50-16:52

    It's seeing God save people.

    16:52-16:53

    It's seeing God change people.

    16:54-16:56

It's seeing God dwell in people.

    16:56-17:15

And the testimony is to be, you know, "Hey, Jesus saved me from my sin!" And the response is, "Did He really?" "Did He save you from your sin?" "Because you look like you're still living in your sin." "What exactly did He save you from?" Do they see the power of God in you?

    17:16-17:18

Or does the world see you living in an ungodly way?

    17:20-17:20

    And church, shame on us.

    17:20-17:23

Sometimes we're engaged in the same sin.

    17:24-17:25

We're telling the same dirty jokes.

    17:26-17:28

We're using the same perverted language.

    17:30-17:32

    We're applauding the same perversity.

    17:33-17:43

And like I've heard my pastor say often, he says, "Just when the world needs us the most, we become just like them." And that is the exact opposite of what Jesus was praying for here.

    17:43-18:01

"Father, unify them, set them apart so the world sees us in them, and that is going to draw the world." So we're one with Jesus Christ, but I have to remind us here, it's not just that, we're one with each other.

    18:03-18:11

And at this point I have to remind us that biblical New Testament Christianity is a corporate thing, not an individual thing. Hang on.

    18:13-18:21

Hear me out. Because so many people get this idea that your walk with Christ is just a me and Jesus thing.

    18:22-18:27

    Right? It's just me and Jesus. I don't need a church, I don't need another believer, I don't need a small group.

    18:27-18:31

It's just a me and Jesus thing. It's me and Jesus. That's my religion, that's my church.

    18:32-18:35

And I would say that is... First of all, I would say don't talk like that.

    18:35-18:41

Second of all, I would say that is nowhere in the Bible.

    18:42-18:45

    Now, yes, listen, don't misunderstand.

    18:45-18:53

Your salvation is an individual matter, meaning your grandma can't save you, your pastor can't save you, your small group leader can't save you.

    18:54-18:57

That is a between you and Jesus thing, because it has to do with your personal sin.

    18:58-18:59

    Yes, absolutely true.

    18:59-19:07

But, at the same time, when you are saved, You are called to be a part of a body of believers.

    19:09-19:11

Otherwise, what was Jesus praying for here?

    19:11-19:22

When Jesus said, "Father, I'm praying that they may all be one." And you're like, "Not me, I'm a lone wolf Christian." Oh, then you're not in the group that Jesus is praying for here then, right?

    19:24-19:28

You want to disqualify yourself from the group that Jesus is praying for.

    19:28-19:30

That's a terrible idea, by the way.

    19:31-19:36

Alright? Because Jesus is praying that they may be one.

    19:36-19:39

And isn't it ironic that you can't be one by yourself?

    19:41-19:43

    Because oneness here is unity.

    19:43-19:55

Every part of the body of Christ going after the same thing, the same thing that Jesus and the Father went after, seeing lost people saved through a testimony of oneness.

    19:57-20:09

So listen, if you're truly saved, if you are truly in Christ, you can't separate yourself from Jesus, and you can't separate yourself from one another.

    20:12-20:18

So church, can we agree with Jesus in prayer for unity and oneness?

    20:19-20:27

that we would be united with God, and as a result be united with one another.

    20:28-20:30

Shouldn't we be praying for that?

    20:31-20:32

    One more.

    20:34-20:39

One more. Number two, or number five, you really should have been here last week.

    20:39-20:41

He wants you to be with Him.

    20:43-20:44

He wants you to be with Him.

    20:45-20:58

Okay, now, this is one of those really hard times that I can't possibly communicate with any words that I try to string together.

    20:58-21:00

I can't communicate the impact of this statement.

    21:01-21:02

That doesn't mean I'm not going to try.

    21:02-21:05

I'm just saying I feel already inadequate going into this.

    21:06-21:20

Okay, this was Jesus' last extended prayer time before betrayal, arrest, crucifixion, Right? So we've seen Jesus is praying for some pretty significant things.

    21:20-21:29

And what we're about to look at, verse 24, is the very last petition Jesus makes to God, the Father, before the cross.

    21:29-21:33

This is the last thing, the last petition, the last thing I'm asking.

    21:33-21:35

This is His, "Okay, Father, just one more thing.

    21:36-21:44

Just one more thing, Father." And you're like, "Okay, the last thing Jesus asked the Father for before the cross." It has to have huge significance and impact, right?

    21:44-21:46

This has to be something major, right?

    21:47-21:54

This has to be more than, "Father, give me traveling mercies on my way." It has to be something so much bigger than that, right?

    21:55-21:57

    Well, here it is.

    21:58-21:59

    Look at verse 24.

    22:00-22:19

Jesus said, "Father, I desire that they also whom You have given Me may be with Me where I am, to see My glory that you have given Me, because you love Me before the foundation of the world." Did you see that?

    22:20-22:23

The very last thing that Jesus Christ prays for, did you see it?

    22:24-22:27

He's like, "I'm about to die, but God, I'm going to ask You for one more thing.

    22:28-22:35

I want these people to be with Me." He wants you to be with Him.

    22:36-22:39

Alright, I see that it's not landing here.

    22:39-22:40

I'm going to take another run at this.

    22:43-22:45

He wants you to be with Him.

    22:48-22:49

Okay, I'm going to take another run at it.

    22:50-22:52

Maybe I'm just not emphasizing t he right words.

    22:52-22:57

Okay, He wants you to be with Him.

    23:00-23:01

    Yes! Yes!

    23:02-23:03

    This for sure, okay?

    23:05-23:07

He wants you to be with Him.

    23:08-23:09

He wants you to be what?

    23:10-23:11

He wants you to be with Him!

    23:13-23:17

Maybe this is like a theological grenade that will go off later in your head.

    23:18-23:19

And that's what I'm hoping for.

    23:20-23:24

Because it will here in a second, because I'm going to show you something else that will absolutely blow your mind.

    23:26-23:31

But you know, the president's never asked me to come to the White House.

    23:32-24:01

And you're like, "I don't think the president would want you at the White House." the last president didn't either. But what I see here is the God of the universe is praying that I'd be with him. And look, if that truth doesn't move you, if the truth doesn't move you that Jesus Christ wants you with him, then you are too attached to this world. And spoiler alert, you aren't going to be here forever.

    24:03-24:11

Like, "What? You're not going to be here forever." Okay, that was mind-blowing to me, but there's...

    24:12-24:13

    It's even deeper than that.

    24:13-24:17

You're like, "Well, why does He want us there?" Why does He want us there?

    24:17-24:19

That's a really good question, why He wants us there.

    24:20-24:24

You know, because I've never had anybody really important, like want me to be somewhere.

    24:24-24:30

I've had a lot of really important people ask me to not be certain places, but why does He want us there?

    24:30-24:31

    Look at the verse again.

    24:31-24:38

He says, "I desire that they also whom you have given me may be with me where I am." Okay, why Jesus? Why do you want me there? Look at this.

    24:38-24:47

Next phrase, "To see my glory." "To see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world." He wants us there to see his glory.

    24:48-24:55

Now the disciples, when they walked with Jesus, Jesus' glory was veiled in the human flesh, right?

    24:56-24:57

    Except for that transfiguration.

    24:58-25:00

    They got a peak, right?

    25:00-25:02

Kind of like Superman opening the shirt.

    25:02-25:05

That's what the disciples got with the Transfiguration.

    25:05-25:15

"We got to see His glory, but just for a minute, but we saw it." And most of the time, Jesus veiled in flesh they didn't see.

    25:16-25:19

And we've never seen Him, right?

    25:20-25:31

But the day is coming when Jesus Christ is going to put His full glory on display for all of us to see.

    25:32-25:33

And I know what you're thinking.

    25:33-25:48

Some of you are thinking, "So why does He want us to be there for that?" "Why does He want us to be there for that?" I mean, does Jesus need affirmation from me?

    25:48-25:51

Like, Jesus is glorious because, you know what?

    25:52-26:19

I really need you there to be patting me on the back and saying, "Oh boy, Jesus, pretty glorious today. Does Jesus need my affirmation? That is not it at all. And you know I thought I thought about this all week like okay Jesus wants me there which is mind-blowingly awesome for whatever reason that might be but the fact that Jesus wants me there to see his glory all week I've been like why does he want me there to see his glory? Why does he want me there to see his glory?

    26:20-26:20

    Like why?

    26:21-26:22

    And then it hit me.

    26:23-26:29

You know, when little kids play soccer, you know, a lot of you have kids that play on little soccer teams and stuff.

    26:29-26:33

When kids play soccer, they want their parents to be there, right?

    26:33-26:34

    Why?

    26:35-26:37

    The parents aren't playing, right?

    26:37-26:38

    At least I hope not.

    26:38-26:43

Why does the kid want the parents there when they're playing soccer?

    26:43-26:45

Mommy, I scored a goal, did you see?

    26:46-26:47

Why is that such a big deal?

    26:48-26:52

Or like when somebody graduates and they want grandma there.

    26:53-26:55

Like I'm graduating grandma, I really want you to be there.

    26:55-26:56

    Like why?

    26:57-26:58

    Grandma ain't graduating.

    26:59-27:01

    Grandma graduated decades ago.

    27:02-27:04

Like why does grandma need to be there?

    27:05-27:10

Now I thought you know when somebody gets married, one of the first things they do is they put that guest list together.

    27:11-27:13

And they're like, I want my BFF to be there.

    27:14-27:15

Like why do you want your BFF to be there?

    27:17-27:18

    Your BFF ain't getting married.

    27:19-27:20

Why do you want them there?

    27:21-27:22

Do you see a common thread?

    27:23-27:26

In every one of those instances, it's this.

    27:27-27:28

    I love you.

    27:29-27:32

And I want to share this glorious experience with you.

    27:33-27:39

Scoring that goal, getting that diploma, saying those vows, these are glorious things.

    27:40-28:45

And it means a lot to me to have people that I love to be there to share that experience me. So what Jesus is praying for here is that times infinity to say, "God, I love them so much and I realize I'm about to be glorified with the name above all names and I want them there for that. I want to make sure they're on the guest list so they can share the most glorious experience in all of the universe with me. Please God, that's what I'm praying for. But it's even deeper than that. Because understand that this isn't just looking at Him. Okay? This isn't just, you know, you get to heaven and it's like, okay, everybody sit down, Jesus is about to come on the stage, to put His glory on display, make sure you watch. It's even more than that. Because the Bible says that we will be just like Him, sharing in that glory.

    28:45-28:48

    Look at 1 John 3.2.

    28:48-28:48

    Look at this.

    28:48-28:54

John says, "Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared.

    28:55-29:07

But we know that when He appears, we shall be like Him." We talked about that back in our 1 Corinthians 15 series, I believe, that we're going to get a glorified body exactly like Jesus' glorified body.

    29:07-29:09

He says, "We shall be like Him." Why?

    29:10-29:12

Do you see that next phrase?

    29:12-29:14

Because we shall see Him as He is.

    29:14-29:22

So do you understand when Jesus is talking about, "I want them to see My glory," it's so much more than just eyeballing it.

    29:22-29:25

It's about experiencing the glory with Him.

    29:26-29:28

That we actually become part of His glory.

    29:29-29:39

That in heaven, everything we do, everything we say, ultimately has to do with beholding and sharing and experiencing the glory of the Son of God.

    29:39-29:54

So I would just ask, "Who's excited for heaven?" But you know, when I read this prayer, it sounds to me like heaven is a bigger deal to Jesus than it is to us.

    29:55-30:06

You know, so often we talk about, "Can't wait for heaven, can't wait to go to heaven, can't wait to go to heaven," and it sounds to me like Jesus, even more than us, can't wait for us to be in heaven.

    30:07-30:08

Now you wrap your brain around that.

    30:09-30:09

    He's worthy.

    30:10-30:18

He's worthy to have us see His glory, and it is going to be our privilege to share that glory with Him.

    30:18-30:23

It is going to be our privilege to worship Him in that glory forever.

    30:24-30:28

So can we agree with Jesus in prayer for a desire to be with Him?

    30:29-30:30

    Alright, two more verses here.

    30:31-30:33

    Verses 25 and 26.

    30:33-30:39

Jesus says, "O righteous Father, even though the world does not know You, I know You, and these know that You have sent Me.

    30:40-30:51

I made known to them Your name, and I will continue to make it known that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them." So He's not asking for anything.

    30:51-30:53

This is the end of the prayer.

    30:53-30:54

    This is the amen.

    30:55-30:57

This is the "You are loved" part of the prayer.

    30:58-31:03

And in this, Jesus doesn't ask for anything, but He declares something.

    31:03-31:20

Do you see that? He says, "I'm going to continue to make your name known." And I would say Jesus certainly kept His word, because as I look around this room, I see that He's continuing to make the Father's name known, because His love is certainly in you, and Jesus is certainly in you.

    31:20-31:22

So Jesus is certainly keeping His word.

    31:23-31:27

Jesus prayed for you to be unified and ultimately to be in His presence.

    31:28-31:41

Father in heaven, I've been thinking about this all week, and I still just feel like I don't have the capacity to absorb everything that this is saying.

    31:41-31:48

That Jesus Christ loves us so much that He wants to share His glory with us.

    31:49-31:58

And that until that day comes, Father, He wants us to be unified in holy oneness, to glorify your name and empowered by your spirit.

    31:58-32:17

Father, as we come to your table today, I pray for unity for this church, that we would be people who believe we are sanctified, we are set apart by your word, and we are passionately authentic in pursuing a relationship with you, that you provided through your Son, Jesus Christ.

    32:18-32:24

Father, we thank you for the very deep and personal love that you've demonstrated for us.

    32:25-32:31

We got to witness through a sneak peek at what Jesus was praying before he suffered for us.

    32:32-32:40

We come around your table, Father, now in the glorious name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior forever. Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 17:20-26

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. As specific as you can – describe what Jesus meant by “being one”. How did Jesus demonstrate that with His relationship with the Father?

  3. What are some obstacles to “one-ness” in the church?

  4. Why does Jesus want us to “see His glory” (John 17:24)? How would you respond to someone who responds to this, “That sounds arrogant!”?

Breakout
Pray for one another, that we would grow in the reality of one-ness with Christ.

Open up your Bibles with me please to John chapter 17.

    01:01-01:01

    Amen.

    01:02-01:03

John chapter 17, are you there?

    01:05-01:15

You know, we're going to be talking about prayer for the next couple of weeks, and kids pray the darndest things, don't they?

    01:17-01:23

I taught Pioneer Club for many, many years, and I was in charge of the whole program.

    01:24-01:28

So because I was in charge of the program, I could choose which group I wanted to teach.

    01:29-01:33

So I chose the third and fourth graders because I loved that age group.

    01:35-01:37

And Pioneer Club, if you don't know, it's like a WANA.

    01:37-01:44

It was like a Wednesday night kids program, kind of like a WANA with a little bit of like Boy Scout type stuff in it.

    01:44-01:48

but there'd be Bible lessons and games and all of that.

    01:48-01:54

But one of my favorite parts of the night was taking prayer requests from the kids.

    01:55-01:59

And if you have ever done any kind of kids ministry, you understand what I'm talking about, don't you?

    02:00-02:02

Kids have the greatest prayer requests.

    02:03-02:06

And Aaron and I still to this day talk about some of our favorites over the years.

    02:06-02:11

Remember the one time we started out, you know, all right, what can we pray for kids?

    02:11-02:30

And one kid, he goes, "I wanna pray that nobody gets bitten by a snake." And I'm like, "I am so on board with that." And all of God's people said, "Amen, amen." But then we had one kid, I'm not gonna mention names, he's like an adult now and he might be watching this stream.

    02:30-02:45

But I remember he says, "Yeah, I have a prayer request." I said, "Okay, who do we wanna pray for?" He said, "I wanna pray for the man "who was riding his bike in the flood." And I'm going to be honest with you, I didn't know what to pray for that guy.

    02:45-02:47

I'm like, "Are we praying for his safety?

    02:47-02:48

Are we praying for his bike?

    02:49-02:52

Are we praying that he gets where he's going?" I don't know what to pray for this guy.

    02:52-02:58

I was just at a loss and that's where I was kind of, you know, the Bible says the Holy Spirit, you know, prays with us in things we don't understand.

    02:58-03:17

I'm like, "Holy Spirit, you're going to have to take this one because I don't even know what to say about that." But probably my all-time favorite prayer request in Pioneer Club was this, we had this one little boy and he talked faster than my brain could process.

    03:17-03:18

Do you know anybody like that?

    03:19-03:24

They say three sentences and your brain's still trying to process the first phrase of the first sentence.

    03:25-03:26

    This kid was like that.

    03:26-03:39

And he went on this whole brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I really wanna pray for this cat because he got caught in the recliner three weeks ago.

    03:43-03:46

Like your cat got caught in the recliner three weeks ago.

    03:48-03:53

I said, "Is he okay?" He goes, "I don't know, he's still there."

    03:55-03:55

    (congregation laughing)

    03:58-03:58

    Yeah.

    04:01-04:08

But you know, there's something honest and innocent about that that I just love.

    04:11-04:16

And sad to say that, you know what happens to those kids?

    04:17-04:21

Sad to say they grow up to be people like us and you lose that honesty.

    04:22-04:28

You lose that innocence and you lose that straightforwardness in prayer.

    04:29-04:33

And as adults, we get kind of lame when it comes to praying.

    04:34-04:42

Honestly, we pray things like, "God be with me today." You don't got to pray that.

    04:43-04:49

If you belong to Jesus Christ, He's already promised, "I will never leave you or forsake you." I don't got to pray that.

    04:50-04:51

    But I know He is.

    04:52-04:54

Can we please get a little more specific in our prayers?

    04:56-05:01

or we pray, "God bless grandma." Bless grandma how?

    05:04-05:06

Her health, give her a million dollars.

    05:06-05:07

We're like, what are we saying?

    05:07-05:08

Can we please pray a little more specifically?

    05:10-05:13

And sometimes, and look church, I can be guilty of this too.

    05:15-05:19

Sometimes our prayers sum total is just the sick list.

    05:20-05:21

And I get why that is.

    05:21-05:28

And like I said, this happens to me because there's so many health needs that consumes our prayer time.

    05:30-05:32

And absolutely we should be praying.

    05:33-05:36

I have a good friend right now who's very sick and I've been praying nonstop.

    05:38-05:44

We should be praying for that, but sometimes that's all we pray for.

    05:46-05:47

And we don't get to kingdom matters.

    05:47-05:49

We don't get to spiritual matters.

    05:49-05:52

We don't get to eternity matters.

    05:52-05:53

Do you hear what I'm saying?

    05:54-06:04

And sometimes church, since we're being completely honest here, so many of our prayers revolve around me, right, me.

    06:05-06:07

God do this for me, God give this to me.

    06:08-06:17

And yes, we should be praying for ourselves, but again, sometimes like the sick list, it consumes our prayers.

    06:19-06:27

And for the next two weeks, we're gonna be in John 17, and I want you to see what Jesus prayed for.

    06:29-06:33

And I want us to learn how to pray for the same things that Jesus asked the Father for.

    06:35-06:41

And you're like, "Well, what did Jesus pray for?" It's easy, Jesus really only prayed for one thing.

    06:43-06:44

    Prayed for one thing.

    06:46-06:49

He prayed for the Father's glory to be on display.

    06:50-06:51

    That's what he prayed for.

    06:54-07:03

Specifically, Father's glory revealed, first of all, Jesus prayed for himself, but he prayed for the Father's glory to be on display through himself.

    07:03-07:05

    He prayed for his disciples.

    07:05-07:08

He prayed for the Father's glory to be manifest through the disciples.

    07:08-07:13

And ultimately, in this prayer in John 17, do you know who Jesus prayed for?

    07:13-07:18

He literally prayed for you and for me, literally.

    07:21-07:26

So first of all, John 17, let's talk about Jesus' prayers for Himself.

    07:27-07:32

Again you're going to see, even though He was praying for Himself, these were not self-seeking prayers.

    07:34-07:41

Verse 1 it says, "When Jesus had spoken these words, He lifted up His eyes to heaven and said, 'Father, the hour has come.

    07:43-07:51

your Son that the Son may glorify you." Jesus says it's time.

    07:53-08:04

"Father, I'm asking that you glorify me for the purpose of glorifying you." What does it mean to glorify?

    08:05-08:22

It just means Jesus is saying, "God, manifest your presence." Jesus is saying, "God, show them who you are." And when Jesus said, "The hour has come, the hour's here," He's talking about the cross.

    08:23-08:24

And we've talked about this before.

    08:24-08:32

Never in all of history was God's character more on display than when Jesus Christ was on the cross.

    08:32-08:34

That's what Jesus is praying about here.

    08:35-08:41

When you look at Jesus on the cross, What you see is God's love.

    08:42-08:46

I love you so much that I'm willing to let my son die on your behalf.

    08:46-08:48

And at the same time, you see God's hatred for sin.

    08:49-08:56

Sin is so wicked and your rebellion is so nasty that there has to be payment and my son is going to pay.

    08:56-09:00

You see the attributes of God perfectly on display on the cross.

    09:00-09:02

That's what Jesus is praying here.

    09:03-09:05

He says, "God, show them who you are.

    09:06-09:06

    Show them!

    09:09-09:11

Two reasons the Son is glorified.

    09:14-09:15

    Jesus goes on to pray.

    09:15-09:19

He says, "Glorify me that I can glorify you." Why is Jesus glorified?

    09:19-09:20

    Two reasons.

    09:20-09:22

Who He is and what He's done.

    09:22-09:23

First of all, who He is.

    09:23-09:23

    Look at verse 2.

    09:26-09:41

Verse 2, Jesus said, "Since you have given Him," meaning the Son, Jesus, "Since you have You've given him authority over all flesh to give eternal life to all whom you have given him." This is the who.

    09:41-09:42

    Why is the Son glorified?

    09:43-09:45

Because He is the one who has all authority.

    09:47-09:49

    Jesus rules over all.

    09:49-09:51

He's been given the name that is above all names.

    09:53-09:57

And this verse kind of sounds like the Great Commission, right?

    09:58-10:05

Jesus said before He sent the disciples out, "All authority in heaven and on earth "has been given to me," Matthew 28, right?

    10:08-10:12

Specifically here, Jesus is talking about the authority to give eternal life.

    10:15-10:16

    How would you define that?

    10:16-10:19

Somebody says, "Hey, what's eternal life?" How would you describe that?

    10:19-10:20

    How would you define it?

    10:20-10:22

I think for a lot of us, we define it in terms of time.

    10:23-10:27

    Eternal life is living forever.

    10:28-10:31

You know, eternal is just never ending.

    10:31-10:34

We define in time, and for some people we define it as a place.

    10:34-10:42

Eternal life is being in heaven, and Jesus defined eternal life as relationship.

    10:43-10:43

    Look at verse three.

    10:45-10:54

Jesus said, "And this is eternal life, "that they know you." The only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

    10:58-11:01

Jesus said eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus.

    11:02-11:08

That's the theme of this whole three year series that we're on by the way, knowing Jesus.

    11:09-11:17

You notice there's a line through the word about because as a church, we wanna grow from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    11:18-11:19

    Like what's the difference?

    11:19-11:19

    Everything.

    11:20-11:23

There's a huge difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus.

    11:25-11:33

You know, for somebody that's visiting this church for the first time, I could right now give you a list of factoids about my wife, Erin.

    11:33-11:43

I could just give you a list of things about her and you could write them down, and when you left here, you would know some things about my wife, but you wouldn't know her.

    11:43-11:49

You see, that's relationship, that's connection, and that's what Jesus is talking about here.

    11:49-11:55

He said eternal life is coming into relationship with God.

    11:56-12:00

When that happens through him, it's knowing God.

    12:03-12:07

Jesus points out that it's not possible to know God except through Jesus, right?

    12:10-12:13

So Jesus is glorified because of who he is.

    12:13-12:14

He's the one with all authority.

    12:15-12:16

He has the authority to grant eternal life.

    12:17-12:18

And he's glorified by what he does.

    12:19-12:20

Look at verses 4 and 5.

    12:20-12:25

Jesus said, "I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

    12:26-12:28

And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence.

    12:31-12:39

With the glory that I had with you before the world existed." Jesus glorified God by his life.

    12:41-12:42

    He finished the work.

    12:42-12:42

    Did you see that?

    12:42-12:54

Jesus said, "I accomplished the work," verse four, "that you gave me to do." Jesus is talking about the cross like it's already a done deal.

    12:55-12:58

There's no backing out, there's no turning around, there's no changing your mind.

    12:58-13:24

Jesus said, "I'm here and I've done everything "and will do everything that you've called me to, "it's over." Jesus here is saying, "I'm finishing up the work "that you gave me, Father, and I'm ready to come home." The prayer then shifts to the disciples, to specifically here what we're looking at today, the 11, right?

    13:24-13:25

    Because Judas left.

    13:26-13:39

But you're going to see very clearly here, there are principles in this passage, not just for these disciples, but for these disciples and for the disciples that are streaming and watching this on the internet.

    13:40-13:42

The disciples are going to be watching this later.

    13:42-13:44

There are principles here for all disciples.

    13:46-13:51

And I want us to look at this section of prayer from Jesus.

    13:53-13:58

By the way, this is the only extended prayer of Jesus we have written in the Bible, by the way.

    13:59-14:06

But I want us to look at this prayer, and I want us to do two things as a result of looking at this.

    14:06-14:11

First of all, we should be in awe of the things that God prayed for.

    14:12-14:14

Because make no mistake, this is God praying.

    14:15-14:25

So not only should we be in awe, but I want this to move us to pray for the things that Jesus prayed for.

    14:26-14:37

If Jesus thought these things were so important, the hours before His arrest and crucifixion and all that went with that.

    14:39-14:46

This was Jesus' last opportunity to really get before the Father and pray, and he thought this is what matters.

    14:47-14:51

So I would suggest to you, church, if this mattered to Jesus in this hour, it should matter to us.

    14:51-14:55

And we should take a hard look at the things that move God to pray.

    14:56-14:56

    Right?

    14:57-15:08

So in your outline, knowing his prayer, what Jesus wants for his disciples, that's what we're going to see here, and these are the things that we need to be praying about, church.

    15:09-15:15

What Jesus wants for His disciples, number one, write this down, He wants you to be authentic.

    15:18-15:19

Look at verses 6 through 10.

    15:21-15:31

Jesus said, as He continued to pray, "I have manifested Your name to the people whom You have given Me out of the world.

    15:32-15:37

they were, and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your Word.

    15:40-15:44

Now they know that everything that You have given Me is from You.

    15:46-15:59

For I have given them the words that You gave Me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from You, and they have believed that You sent Me.

    16:01-16:02

    I'm praying for them.

    16:03-16:08

I'm not praying for the world, but for those whom you've given me, for they are yours.

    16:08-16:14

All mine are yours and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.

    16:14-16:15

    Stop there.

    16:16-16:18

First thing you see, Jesus is praying for his disciples.

    16:19-16:22

Then, now, he wants his disciples to be authentic.

    16:25-16:29

Notice, Jesus referred to the disciples as those you gave me.

    16:29-16:32

That phrase comes up seven times in this passage.

    16:32-16:43

That Jesus makes it very clear, "Father, you gave them to me." When Jesus makes a very clear distinction here, Jesus says, "I'm praying for my disciples.

    16:44-16:48

"I'm not praying for the world." And somebody would look at this and be like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second.

    16:48-16:52

"Are you trying to tell me "that Jesus doesn't care about the world?

    16:53-16:56

"I'm not saying that at all." Of course he does.

    16:58-17:01

But this prayer is laser focused, okay?

    17:02-17:04

    This one is laser focused.

    17:05-17:07

    He's praying for authentic disciples.

    17:09-17:09

    Like, well, what's that?

    17:09-17:11

    What is an authentic disciple?

    17:12-17:16

We notice Jesus didn't pray for church goers.

    17:18-17:20

Jesus didn't pray for part-time pretenders.

    17:22-17:26

Jesus didn't pray for those who made some sort of profession.

    17:28-17:31

Jesus marked a true disciple by one thing.

    17:31-17:32

    Look at verse 6 again.

    17:35-17:45

He says, the end of verse 6, "They have kept your word." Jesus, that's how you identify a true believer.

    17:46-17:48

    They keep God's word.

    17:49-17:52

And you're like, "Ahh, hang on, hang on, hang on Jeff, hang on, hang on.

    17:54-18:02

You might have forgotten this, but I haven't, but last week you did a whole sermon that our walk with Christ is faith-based, not performance-based.

    18:02-18:07

And now you're saying a true believer is one who keeps God's Word.

    18:10-18:12

And I still stand by everything I said last week.

    18:13-18:15

    Your faith is not performance-based.

    18:15-18:23

But a true disciple by definition of being born again has been transformed.

    18:24-18:27

And what transforms in a true disciple is your appetites and desires.

    18:28-18:33

None of us are perfect, but you should have this desire and appetite to keep God's Word.

    18:35-18:45

A true believer has this attitude, to say, "God, Your Word is true, Your way is right, You provided wisdom, I want to honor You.

    18:45-18:52

I want to live this life that You gave me, this life that You saved, I want to live it in a way that honors You." That's what a true believer says.

    18:53-18:56

"Oh, I know I'm not going to do it perfectly.

    18:56-18:56

    I'm going to mess up.

    18:56-19:04

I'm going to struggle, but God, I have this desire to keep your Word, to grow." That's a true believer.

    19:06-19:08

It's not about perfection, it's about direction.

    19:10-19:21

And if you're sitting here today and you're like, "Well, it's not performance-based, and I really don't have any desire to know God's Word and to keep God's Word," well, then you don't know.

    19:21-19:23

That's just all there is to it.

    19:23-19:23

    You don't know Him.

    19:27-19:31

If Jesus Christ hasn't changed you, then He hasn't saved you, and you don't know Him.

    19:32-19:59

If you don't see this radical change to want to know and honor God in all things, if you don't see spiritual growth, if you're not striving to honor God's Word, if you're not looking to see like, "How can I incorporate God's wisdom in the home, in the workplace, my neighborhood, how can I live the way God has outlined in His Word?" If that's not you, then you aren't a true disciple.

    20:03-20:08

That's why the Bible refers to our life in Christ over and over and over.

    20:08-20:09

The Bible calls it a walk.

    20:11-20:12

    Your walk with Christ.

    20:12-20:14

Why does the Bible call it a walk?

    20:15-20:20

We talk about this in the membership class, because a walk implies a couple of things.

    20:20-20:23

One, a walk implies intentionality, right?

    20:24-20:27

If you're going to take a walk, that doesn't happen by accident.

    20:27-20:33

You have to think, "I'm going to stand up and I'm going to move one foot in front of the other." That's an intentional choice.

    20:34-20:35

    So it is with Christ.

    20:35-20:37

    It is an intentional choice.

    20:37-20:38

    I'm going to walk.

    20:39-20:44

But walking also shows progress over time.

    20:45-20:45

    Right?

    20:47-20:48

I mean, this isn't rocket science.

    20:49-20:55

Walk is I'm here, now I'm walking, and now I'm here.

    20:56-20:58

And a walk shows progress over time.

    20:59-21:04

Like, you know, a few seconds ago I was there, and now I am here.

    21:06-21:08

That's how it is in your walk with Christ.

    21:09-21:10

    Spiritual maturity.

    21:10-21:14

To say, "You know, when I first came to Christ, I was there.

    21:14-21:30

And I didn't understand a lot, and I was immature in a lot of ways, but I can see how far Christ has brought me, and look where I am now, and here's where I'm heading, and by God's grace, I'm going to get there." But you should be able to see progress over time in your spiritual growth.

    21:31-21:32

    That's why it's called a walk.

    21:35-21:39

"What's that look like?" Well, Jesus tells us in verse 8, look at verse 8 again real quick with me, please.

    21:41-21:48

Jesus said, "For I've given them," this is how it works, "For I've given them the words that you gave me, and they've received them.

    21:49-21:53

Come to know the truth that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me." Did you see all the elements?

    21:53-21:58

The word is given, the word is received, the word is believed, and that changes your life.

    21:59-22:00

    That's how it works.

    22:03-22:03

    That's authentic.

    22:05-22:11

So your view of God's Word honestly tells me everything anybody needs to know about you.

    22:14-22:16

Your view of God's Word says everything about you.

    22:17-22:25

Because according to Jesus, the number one characteristic of a disciple in this prayer, he says, "They have kept your Word.

    22:27-22:44

They've received it, they believe it, and they've kept it, and they're yours, and you gave them to me." So I would just ask church, can we agree with Jesus in prayer for authentic disciples that glorify Him?

    22:46-22:46

    You one of them?

    22:49-22:50

That's something we should be praying about.

    22:51-22:54

    Authentic disciples glorifying Christ.

    22:54-23:01

Number two, knowing His prayer, what Jesus wants for His disciples, write this down, He wants you to be protected.

    23:04-23:05

He wants you to be protected.

    23:05-23:06

    Look at verse 11.

    23:07-23:09

Jesus goes on in His prayer.

    23:12-23:19

He says, "And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I'm coming to you.

    23:21-23:28

Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

    23:29-23:32

While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me.

    23:32-23:43

I have guarded them and not one of them has been lost, except the son of destruction, that the scripture might be fulfilled.

    23:44-23:46

You know who he's talking about there, right?

    23:47-23:48

You know who he's talking about.

    23:49-23:50

    Talking about Judas, right?

    23:52-23:54

Judas was never really on board.

    23:57-24:05

Jesus said, "I've kept everybody "except the one that didn't want kept." Verse 13, he goes, "But now I'm coming to you.

    24:06-24:12

In these things I speak in the world that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

    24:15-24:19

I've given them your word and the world has hated them because they are not of the world.

    24:20-24:28

Just as I am not of the world, I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one.

    24:29-24:34

They are not of the world just as I am not of the world.

    24:35-24:35

    Stop there.

    24:37-24:38

    Like, what's Jesus saying?

    24:39-24:40

    He's saying a lot.

    24:41-24:48

But the overall thing that Jesus is praying for in that section is just simply this, church.

    24:49-24:50

    He wants you protected.

    24:52-24:52

    You see that?

    24:53-25:01

Verse 11 to 12, he says, "Keep them as I kept them when I was here." Protect them.

    25:01-25:02

    Why, Jesus?

    25:02-25:04

Why are you so concerned about protection?

    25:04-25:25

He tells us in verse 14, he says, "The world hates them." And verse 15, "The evil one is after them." So he says, "Holy Father, keep them." Now certainly, we have our responsibility, right?

    25:26-25:36

We don't just walk in the world stupidly, like, "I can do whatever I want because God's going to protect me." Like we're not stupid, right?

    25:36-25:39

The Bible is clear that we have our responsibility.

    25:39-25:44

The Bible says things like, "We are not unaware of the devil's schemes," right?

    25:45-25:49

The Bible says things like, "Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves," right?

    25:52-26:04

But whether we face insults or we face imprisonment or we face death, we're on the path to glory and God is going to make sure that we get there.

    26:07-26:10

And that's why Jesus here is praying for the disciples to be kept by the Father.

    26:11-26:16

He's like, "I was here and I looked after them "and I guarded them because I'm coming to you.

    26:16-26:17

"So I'm handing them over to you.

    26:18-26:21

"Watch after them." That's what he's praying.

    26:24-26:26

Jesus does pray a negative here though, doesn't he?

    26:27-26:42

Verse 15, he prays, "Don't take them out of the world." Jesus said, "Don't take them out of the world." And I read that and I'm like, "Come on, man.

    26:45-26:48

    Like, the world's dangerous.

    26:51-27:01

And Jesus, if you really love me, shouldn't you keep me away from these people that absolutely hate you because they are gonna hate me by default then?

    27:01-27:04

I mean, didn't you say we're gonna be sheep among wolves?

    27:05-27:10

Wouldn't it be better?" Like, you know, God's never asked my opinion on anything.

    27:12-27:22

Unsolicited, but wouldn't it be better if like once somebody got saved, born again, child of God, he was like, "All right, you're coming to heaven." That would be fantastic.

    27:24-27:25

    He doesn't do that.

    27:27-27:33

So, why are we still here, right?

    27:34-27:39

If He saved us and we have eternal life, we're heading to heaven, why are we still here?

    27:42-27:47

We're here to put His glory on display in a lost world.

    27:49-27:58

We're here to show a dying world the glories of Jesus Christ and 2 Corinthians 5 calls it the ministry of reconciliation.

    27:59-28:00

    That's why we're here.

    28:01-28:07

We're still here because God wants to use us to lead more people to Jesus Christ.

    28:10-28:11

    That's why we're still here.

    28:12-28:13

We can't do that in heaven.

    28:15-28:17

People ask me all the time, what's heaven gonna be like?

    28:17-28:18

What are we gonna do in heaven?

    28:18-28:19

What are we gonna look like in heaven?

    28:19-28:19

    What are we gonna do?

    28:20-28:23

What about that song that says, there's a big yard, we're gonna play football.

    28:23-28:24

    You think that's true?

    28:25-28:27

And what are we gonna do in heaven?

    28:28-28:35

And well, the Bible says a lot of things, but I know for a fact there's one thing we won't do in heaven and that's evangelize.

    28:37-28:46

And I know that if there's an unemployment line in heaven, I'll be in it, hoping for a STEMI from God.

    28:49-28:50

I'm not going to have a job.

    28:50-28:51

    The worship team will.

    28:53-28:56

They were smart to jump on that bandwagon early, right?

    28:57-29:01

Like, yeah, we'll still be playing in heaven, worshiping the King.

    29:02-29:05

I didn't think this through 20 some years ago.

    29:06-29:08

Like this job is only for here.

    29:09-29:15

Like it's awesome to tell people about Jesus and how he can save you and change you and watch God transform somebody.

    29:15-29:15

    That's awesome.

    29:16-29:21

But you realize I'm like 15 minutes away from the unemployment line and that's hard.

    29:23-29:31

So, for the little bit of time that I have to do it, I guess we'll do it hard, right?

    29:32-29:35

We will do the heck out of it while we have opportunity.

    29:36-29:37

But that's why we're still here.

    29:40-29:40

    Evangelism.

    29:42-29:47

Jesus prayed in this prayer, he reminded us we're not of this world.

    29:48-29:49

    We're citizens of heaven.

    29:49-29:55

So while we're in the world, It's our job to bring heaven to the world.

    29:56-30:06

So I just want to ask you, church, can we agree with Jesus in prayer for God's protection as we seek to glorify Him?

    30:06-30:08

    That's something Jesus prayed for.

    30:08-30:09

Shouldn't we be praying for that?

    30:09-30:10

    God protect us.

    30:11-30:12

    Look, the world hates us.

    30:12-30:12

    Have you noticed?

    30:12-30:14

    The world hates us.

    30:14-30:15

    Protect us.

    30:19-30:29

There is an enemy of your soul that would love nothing more than to see you shipwreck your faith, walk away from your family, destroy your testimony, get the world laughing at the church.

    30:30-30:31

There's an enemy of your soul that would love that.

    30:32-30:34

He's out to get you, like a lion, right?

    30:37-30:39

Shouldn't we be praying for protection?

    30:39-30:40

    That's what Jesus prayed for.

    30:42-30:43

Let's agree with Jesus in prayer.

    30:43-30:44

    He wants you protected.

    30:45-30:48

And finally, He wants you to be used.

    30:53-30:54

He wants you to be used.

    30:55-30:59

Now, when I say used, I don't mean like a used car.

    31:00-31:03

I mean He wants you to be used by God.

    31:04-31:07

He wants you, maybe a better word is usable.

    31:07-31:09

    Maybe that's a better word.

    31:10-31:17

We'll look at verses 17 through 19, and we're going to end with these few verses here today.

    31:19-31:21

Jesus said, "Sanctify them in the truth.

    31:23-31:45

Your word is truth." "As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world, and for their sake I consecrate myself that they also may be sanctified in truth." And you're like, "Well, there's a couple of unfamiliar words here.

    31:46-31:50

Sanctified, consecrate, can you explain those?" Well, yes.

    31:51-31:53

It's the same word actually in the Greek.

    31:55-31:57

And it just simply means this.

    31:58-31:59

    Sanctified consecrate.

    31:59-33:03

to be set apart for an intended use. That's what it means. You're set apart for an intended use. When we were kids, I remember this one afternoon in particular, we have a younger brother and this is how far back it goes, he was just old enough to crawl, okay? And it was this, I think, Saturday and my father took a nap on the couch. When I say took a nap it wasn't one of those little 20-minute twilight things, it was on his side, mouth open, you know the ones I'm talking about? You guys take naps like that? Because I sure do. You know what I'm talking about? Just mouth wide open. Our younger brother was just old enough to crawl. And I don't know whose job it was to watch him. It wasn't mine.

    33:04-33:18

We'll say our sister, right? Because she's not here to defend herself. Okay, it's probably our sister's job to watch him. So what our younger brother did, he crawled into the bathroom and he got the toilet brush.

    33:21-33:25

And he took that toilet brush and he crawled out to the living room.

    33:27-33:29

    And he saw dad sleeping.

    33:32-33:33

And he had that toilet brush.

    33:36-33:37

And he put two and two together.

    33:40-33:41

I saw mom cleaning with this.

    33:43-33:45

And he shoved that toilet brush in dad's mouth.

    33:46-33:48

And started brushing his teeth with it.

    33:50-33:58

How would you like to wake up that way?" That is a true story everywhere.

    34:00-34:00

    I got a witness.

    34:01-34:02

    I got a witness.

    34:05-34:23

So we had to lovingly remind him, "That's not what that's for." That was something that for sure was set aside for an intended and specific use.

    34:26-34:27

    That's sanctified.

    34:30-34:35

And you're like, "Wow, that was the best illustration you could come up with, wasn't it?" Hang on.

    34:36-34:37

It's like the chair you're sitting in.

    34:38-34:40

You know that chair you're sitting in right now?

    34:42-34:46

We set that there for you to sit in it.

    34:46-34:48

You're using it right now for its intended use.

    34:48-34:49

It was put there for that reason.

    34:49-34:51

So you could say that that chair is sanctified.

    34:52-34:53

    You know the guitar?

    34:54-34:58

We could say this guitar is sanctified.

    34:58-35:00

It's set aside for an intended use.

    35:01-35:06

I mean, wouldn't you think it was stupid if you came in and I was hammering in nails with the guitar?

    35:06-35:07

    You're like, "That's not what that's for.

    35:08-35:10

    That has a specific use.

    35:10-35:11

    That's why it's set aside.

    35:14-35:16

Now we're getting the idea of what it means to be sanctified.

    35:17-35:22

You're set aside because I've got something very specific I want to do with this, right?

    35:25-35:31

Jesus here is saying in verse 19 that He was consecrating or sanctifying Himself.

    35:32-35:33

    What was He talking about?

    35:33-35:34

He was talking about the cross.

    35:35-35:37

Jesus said, "This is why I'm here.

    35:38-35:40

I was set aside for this.

    35:41-35:44

I am the only one who's qualified to do this.

    35:45-35:50

The only sinless one who can pay the penalty for the sin.

    35:50-35:56

The only one who is God in the flesh who can offer a sacrifice that's effective for all who will believe.

    35:56-35:58

I'm the only one who can do this.

    35:58-36:00

I was set aside for this, and that's why I'm here.

    36:00-36:03

That's why Jesus said, "I'm consecrating myself." God, this is why I'm here.

    36:04-36:06

I'm not getting distracted in other things.

    36:06-36:07

    I'm here for this.

    36:08-36:09

    This is why I'm here.

    36:12-36:16

For us, we too are consecrated.

    36:16-36:17

    We too are sanctified.

    36:17-36:25

You're like, "For what?" It's for reflecting God's character and accomplishing God's will.

    36:25-36:27

    That's why you're saved.

    36:27-36:28

    That's why you're set apart.

    36:28-36:30

And that's what God wants to do through you.

    36:31-36:34

God wants to show the world what He's like through you.

    36:35-36:39

God wants to accomplish some kingdom things in the world through you.

    36:39-36:43

That's what it means to be sanctified, to recognize that I am set apart for this.

    36:44-36:53

I don't get involved in the meaningless, stupid world things because God set me aside for eternal kingdom things.

    36:53-36:56

That's sanctified, and that's what Jesus is praying for.

    36:57-37:01

Like, "Oh, oh man, Jeff, oh, that's awesome.

    37:01-37:04

That's awesome that God would want to do that, but like how?

    37:04-37:05

    What does that look like?

    37:06-37:08

Yeah, yeah, what does that look like?

    37:09-37:11

Do we know what that looks like?

    37:11-37:13

Do we know what sanctification is?

    37:16-37:20

If only God would show us what sanctification really looks like.

    37:21-37:25

Like hypothetically, what if God wrote it all down in a book?

    37:28-37:28

    Hypothetically.

    37:29-37:36

Like God, he gets a book and in this book he says, like, here's who I am and this is the character of me that you're to reflect.

    37:37-37:40

And this is what my kingdom's about and this is what you're gonna do.

    37:40-37:45

Like, oh, wouldn't it be really cool if he wrote that down and had it in like a book?

    37:45-37:47

I bet you that book would sell a lot.

    37:47-37:52

And I bet you that book would be so popular, they'd probably stick it like in the drawers of hotels.

    37:54-37:55

    Could you imagine?

    37:57-38:00

Well, that's exactly what Jesus was talking about, right?

    38:00-38:03

    Look at verse 17 again.

    38:03-38:11

He said, "Sanctify them in the truth." Like, whose truth?

    38:12-38:13

    Look at the next phrase.

    38:13-38:17

It should be highlighted in your Bible, every Bible, every Bible here highlighted.

    38:18-38:20

Somebody will be at the door to check.

    38:21-38:30

Look at this phrase, "Your word is truth." We are set apart by the truth.

    38:30-38:35

It is God's Word that sanctifies and unifies God's people.

    38:35-38:39

That's why at this church we are so serious about the Word of God.

    38:39-38:44

That's why Harvest Bible Chapel, Bible is our middle name.

    38:45-38:53

Because the Word of God is the means by which we are equipped to be set apart from the world.

    38:54-38:58

Because this book establishes our character.

    38:58-39:00

These are the things that I'm about.

    39:00-39:02

These are the things that I value.

    39:02-39:04

The world doesn't define those things for me.

    39:05-39:07

God defines those things for me.

    39:09-39:13

And it is through this book that we are set apart in our identity.

    39:14-39:15

    This is who I am.

    39:15-39:17

This is who Jesus says I am.

    39:17-39:19

This is what He saved me to be.

    39:20-39:22

This is what He is making me be.

    39:22-39:26

This is how God is conforming me into the image of His Son.

    39:26-39:28

This is how my mind is being renewed.

    39:29-39:30

    It is through this.

    39:30-39:33

So I find my identity in what God says I am.

    39:33-39:36

I don't find my identity in what the world says I am.

    39:36-39:39

That's what it means to be sanctified by the truth.

    39:40-39:41

    It comes from the Word.

    39:42-39:44

This book defines what our mission is.

    39:45-39:46

What am I to spend my time doing?

    39:47-39:48

Look, we're only here for a little bit.

    39:49-39:50

What are you spending your time doing?

    39:54-40:00

We have a mission to take the love and the word of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world.

    40:02-40:08

And oh, what incredible wisdom that God would give us an objective source of truth.

    40:09-40:10

    Thy word is truth, right?

    40:12-40:13

    What wisdom?

    40:14-40:18

Because if we didn't have the Bible, we'd just all be sitting around, "This is what I think is true.

    40:18-40:19

    "Oh, that's interesting.

    40:19-40:21

I think something completely different is true.

    40:21-40:23

Well, here's what I think the church should be doing.

    40:23-40:27

Here's what I think the church should be doing." That's why we should be sitting around doing that all the time.

    40:27-40:30

But God gave us this so that we don't have to do that.

    40:30-40:32

Like, look, we know what God said.

    40:32-40:35

We know what our character is to be.

    40:35-40:38

We know what our mission is to be because God wrote it down.

    40:39-40:44

That's why Jesus said to the Father, "Sanctify them, set them apart.

    40:46-40:50

And the truth, your word is the truth.

    40:54-40:55

    God wants to use you.

    40:57-41:01

And the mission couldn't be more important because there's eternal souls at stake.

    41:02-41:11

So for those of us who are entrusted to carry out the mission, which is all disciples, Jesus prayed that we would be sanctified or set apart by his word.

    41:13-41:34

By the way, remember earlier in verses nine and 10, Jesus said, "I'm not praying for the world." When it comes to evangelism and praying evangelistic prayers in the Bible, we have a very clear pattern in the New Testament.

    41:37-41:42

Jesus very specifically said here, "I'm praying for the people "that I'm sending to reach the world.

    41:43-41:44

I'm not praying for the world.

    41:45-41:51

And so often when we pray evangelistic prayers, we pray for the lost person, right?

    41:51-41:54

I pray that Tim comes to know Jesus.

    41:55-41:58

I pray that so-and-so would come to know Jesus.

    41:59-42:02

And look, it's great to pray that way.

    42:03-42:05

I'm just saying that's not the New Testament pattern.

    42:06-42:06

    It's just not.

    42:06-42:08

You don't see that in the New Testament.

    42:08-42:12

Pray for Epaphroditus to come to the knowledge of the Lord.

    42:12-42:14

Pray that Phoebe repents from her sins.

    42:14-42:17

You don't see that, but do you know what you see every time?

    42:17-42:25

Every time you pray for the workers, you pray for the one bringing the message, pray to the Lord of the harvest to bring, you know, to put workers in the field.

    42:26-42:32

Paul so often said, "Pray for us that we may have boldness." Right, over and over and over, and here again you see it.

    42:32-42:34

Jesus couldn't make it more clear.

    42:34-42:35

I'm not praying for the world.

    42:36-42:37

I'm praying for the people that I'm sending out.

    42:38-42:39

    That's who I'm praying for.

    42:41-42:48

So church, we don't see pray the lost gets saved, we always see pray for the messengers to take the message to lost people.

    42:51-42:59

Jesus made it clear how to pray for the messengers to be used, sanctified in the truth to be sent out into the world.

    43:00-43:00

    Right?

    43:03-43:11

So can we agree with Jesus in prayer for God's word to equip us to carry out his mission?

    43:13-43:14

Shouldn't we be praying for that?

    43:15-43:25

If Jesus thought it's such a worthy thing to pray that His Word would set us apart for His mission, I think that's something the church needs to spend more time praying about.

    43:27-43:29

I just want to close as the worship team comes up.

    43:30-43:41

I don't know what else to do at this point except to close our time here in the Word by praying for these things that Jesus thought was important to pray over.

    43:42-43:47

And we commend you to do the same, to make these things part of your prayer.

    43:49-43:51

Would you bow with me please?

    43:54-44:01

Father, as we bow before you, we thank you for the privilege of prayer.

    44:03-44:09

And so often, Father, we just pray it safe.

    44:11-44:16

Maybe we're afraid that we pray too specific, you won't answer, and we'll be disappointed.

    44:17-44:22

Or maybe we don't really believe that you have the power to do what you promised to do.

    44:22-44:38

I don't know, God, but I pray for those of us who have struggled in prayer that Jesus' example would motivate us and direct us and get us laser focused as He was.

    44:41-44:54

Here Father in this passage we see your Son hours away from a horrific death and you've given us unique insight to see the things that He's praying for.

    44:56-45:02

And Father, as a congregation, we just want to come together right now and pray for those same things.

    45:05-45:08

Father, I pray for authentic disciples that glorify your name.

    45:10-45:24

Father, I pray for us as a church that we are known as a people who keep your Word, that we have received it and we believe it, that we are people that are constantly striving to be the people that you've called us to be.

    45:24-45:35

Father, we know it's not performance-based, but Father, we are fools to think that we can navigate through life in our wisdom when you've given us your wisdom.

    45:36-45:50

So Father, we pray for authenticity, that we are people who are known, not just for our profession of faith, but for our conduct as children of God.

    45:53-45:59

Father, like Jesus, we want to pray for protection for your people.

    46:02-46:08

We live in a world that is becoming less and less shy about showing their hatred for you.

    46:11-46:14

Less and less shy for showing their hatred towards your people.

    46:17-46:19

We know the enemy's prowling around like a roaring lion.

    46:23-46:25

Father, there's just danger all around us.

    46:27-46:30

I pray for your protection as Jesus did.

    46:30-46:32

Father, I pray that you would keep us.

    46:35-46:36

    Protect your people.

    46:38-46:43

Father, I pray that your word would equip us for carrying out your mission.

    46:45-46:51

Jesus said that your truth sanctifies us, and he's sending us into the world the way that you sent him into the world.

    46:51-46:55

And that is such a weighty statement.

    46:57-46:59

He's sending us as you sent him.

    47:01-47:04

Father, I pray that you would set us apart for your intended use.

    47:06-47:11

That that flows from the authenticity, and it happens in the context of your protection.

    47:12-47:13

    But God, use us.

    47:24-47:33

Father, we thank You for what You've done, and I thank You ahead of time for the things that You are going to do.

    47:34-47:35

    We trust You.

    47:37-47:38

    We love You.

    47:40-47:43

We praise you in the glorious name of your Son, Jesus Christ.

    47:44-47:44

    Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 17:1-19

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think many Christians' prayer list is mainly for physical illnesses? Why don't many Christians pray for spiritual / Kingdom matters?

  3. Why ISN'T Jesus praying for the world (John 17:9)? Why is Jesus' prayer focused on disciples? What does this say about how we should pray?

  4. Since Jesus prayed for protection for us, why do so many disciples experience hardships? What exactly was Jesus praying for when He asked the Father to “keep us” (John 17:11)?

Breakout
Pray for the 3 things Jesus prayed for disciples: that we would be authentic, protected, and used by God.

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Victory

Introduction:

Acts 1:3 - He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Life in Christ is Faith-Based Not Performance-Based (John 16:25-33):

  1. Answered Prayers : Faith-based, not performance-based. (John 16:26-27)
  2. God's Love for you: Faith-based, not performance-based. (John 16:27)
  3. Peace : Faith-based, not performance-based. (John 16:33)

1 John 5:4-5 - For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

All right, open up your Bibles with me, please, to John chapter 16, as we continue our series, Knowing Jesus.

    01:05-01:19

You know, while you're turning there, when I was in Bible college, I worked at Walmart, and I remember this one day in particular, it was a very important day in my decorated career at Walmart, it was evaluation day.

    01:20-01:24

How many people get fired up for employee evaluation day?

    01:26-01:26

    Just me.

    01:27-01:29

And one of these from Mike Wolski.

    01:29-01:30

    All right, awesome.

    01:31-01:32

Okay, off to a great start.

    01:32-01:34

Anyways, I was fired up because here's how it works.

    01:34-01:37

I don't know how it works now, but this is how it worked back then.

    01:37-01:45

You get your, there was this list of criteria and you were rated below average, average, or above average.

    01:46-01:49

And then you would get this overall evaluation, right?

    01:50-01:57

And the overall evaluation was the same thing, below average, average, above average, and your raise was based on that, okay?

    01:57-02:02

So if you were average, you got, I think, like a quarter raise, I think.

    02:02-02:09

If you were below average, you got, I think it was like 15 cents, but if you were above average, it was like 35 cents.

    02:11-02:13

So you know what I was swinging for.

    02:14-02:15

Like, daddy needs some new shoes.

    02:16-02:17

We're going for 35 cents, right?

    02:18-02:24

So I'm in this evaluation in the office with the manager and she's going through that sheet with all the criteria.

    02:25-02:29

You know, it's like, you know, exceeds manager's expectations, above average.

    02:29-02:30

    I'm like, boom!

    02:30-02:34

And it's like, you know, customer courtesy, above average.

    02:34-02:35

    Boom! I'm killing it!

    02:35-02:36

    I am just nailing it.

    02:36-02:40

Left and right, on time for work, smells okay, everything.

    02:40-02:42

    Above average, above average.

    02:42-02:43

    I'm like, nailing it.

    02:44-02:52

And I was just like, I can smell the 35 cent increase, it's on the tip of my tongue.

    02:52-02:57

I practically have that change in my hand right now.

    02:57-03:05

And we got to the end of this evaluation, again, all above average, and we get to the end.

    03:06-03:17

And she goes, "So, Jeff, your overall evaluation, "your overall rating as an employee, "as an associate at Walmart is," You know what she said?

    03:18-03:18

    Average.

    03:21-03:22

    I'm not kidding.

    03:25-03:28

I felt the life just leave my body.

    03:28-03:29

    I'm like, average.

    03:29-03:30

    I was devastated.

    03:33-03:38

And I said, I said, I gotta ask you.

    03:40-03:47

I said, if I was above average in every category, Why is my overall rating average?

    03:48-03:49

And do you know what she said?

    03:51-03:54

    She said, "I don't know."

    03:55-03:56

    (congregation laughing)

    04:00-04:04

And I said, "I think I know." I said, "I think corporate doesn't want you "to give the above average raises.

    04:05-04:06

"I think they wanna keep them dimes for themselves.

    04:06-04:13

"I think that's where you're holding us little people down." And that's why I left Walmart and became a pastor.

    04:14-04:15

    (audience laughing)

    04:16-04:18

All right, the story was true except the last sentence.

    04:19-04:22

That wasn't necessarily how that happened, okay?

    04:23-04:31

But, doesn't it seem like a lot of life, a lot of life, a lot of life, is performance-based?

    04:31-04:32

    Doesn't it seem that way?

    04:34-04:43

And like Walmart, doesn't it seem like in so many areas of our lives, Doing our very best just doesn't seem to be good enough.

    04:47-04:50

Anyways, John chapter 16, are you there?

    04:51-04:53

Let's pick up where we left off.

    04:53-04:57

Jesus in this passage is preparing his disciples.

    04:57-05:01

That's what John 13 through 16, that's what this whole chunk of the Bible is about.

    05:01-05:07

Jesus is sitting around the table with his disciples and they're walking to the garden and he's preparing them.

    05:07-05:25

I'm going to die, I'm going to raise from the dead, I'm going to ascend to heaven, but you don't need to worry because you're gonna have the resources of heaven because my spirit, I'm going to ask the Father and the Holy Spirit is going to come and he's going to live in you and he's going to empower you and you are, Jesus said you're gonna have all the resources of heaven.

    05:27-05:34

So what we're looking at today are Jesus' last words to his disciples in this discourse.

    05:36-05:40

And remember the disciples were completely full of sorrow.

    05:40-05:42

Remember that? We've seen that over and over.

    05:42-05:43

    They were sorrowful.

    05:45-05:52

So here Jesus is giving more words of comfort, but you're going to see here, these are like the ultimate words of comfort.

    05:52-05:53

    All right?

    05:54-05:56

So John 16, we're gonna pick up in verse 25.

    05:59-06:03

Jesus said, "I've said these things to you in figures of speech.

    06:05-06:21

The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father." Figures of speech, Jesus said, "That's how I've been talking to you, right?" That could literally be translated veiled statements.

    06:21-06:22

Did Jesus use figures of speech?

    06:23-06:24

    All the time, right?

    06:25-06:26

    All the time.

    06:26-06:27

    "I am the good shepherd.

    06:28-06:31

I am the true bread that comes down from heaven.

    06:31-06:33

I am the light of the world.

    06:33-06:35

I am," what else did we say?

    06:35-06:40

"I'm the living water." and over and over, Jesus gave these figurative statements.

    06:41-06:52

You're like, "Well, why in the world did he speak like that?" There's a lot of reasons, and I could do a whole sermon series on why Jesus preached like that in figures of speech and parables, but here's one reason.

    06:54-07:01

It's important for us to understand today, is there are some things that happened yet that Jesus couldn't explain to the disciples because they just wouldn't get it.

    07:02-07:16

Like, "Well, why wouldn't they get it?" because they were so full of sorrow, and they were so thick-headed, and they were so against this idea of Jesus dying and leaving them, and what are we gonna do without Jesus?

    07:16-07:17

    And they were so sorrowful.

    07:19-07:20

    We've already talked about this.

    07:20-07:22

Jesus is like, there's some things that you can't get right now.

    07:25-07:29

But he says here, did you notice, he said, but the hour's coming.

    07:30-07:32

I'm gonna talk to you plainly about the Father.

    07:32-07:38

And you're like, "Well, what hour is that?" I believe that hour is talked about in Acts 1.3.

    07:40-07:56

It says, "Jesus presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God." Again, this is post-resurrection, but notice that last phrase.

    07:57-08:03

"Jesus, before he ascended into heaven, he spoke to them about the kingdom of God." And I believe that's what Jesus is talking about here.

    08:03-08:04

The day is going to come.

    08:05-08:08

I'm just going to speak very plainly to you.

    08:08-08:09

    Look at verse 26.

    08:10-08:14

Jesus said, "In that day, you will ask in my name.

    08:16-08:23

"And I do not say to you that I will ask the Father "on your behalf." Jesus said, "That day is coming.

    08:23-08:25

"You're gonna be able to go directly to the Father.

    08:26-08:32

"You're not going to need to ask Jesus on your behalf." to Jesus to speak on your behalf.

    08:33-08:37

You're not going to need, listen, you're not going to need anybody to pray on your behalf.

    08:37-08:49

And I know there are some churches that teach you need to pray to this famous religious person or this saint, or even pray to Jesus' mom because you can't pray directly to God.

    08:50-08:55

And I would just say, well, right here, Jesus completely contradicts that whole mindset, that whole teaching.

    08:56-08:59

Jesus said, you can go directly to the Father yourself.

    08:59-09:06

You don't need me, you pray in my name, but you go directly to the Father.

    09:06-09:07

Like, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

    09:08-09:10

So are you saying Jesus doesn't pray for us?

    09:11-09:14

Hang on, Jesus does intercede for us.

    09:15-09:16

    Absolutely, Romans 8.34.

    09:18-09:22

But Jesus intercedes for us over matters of which we have no insight, okay?

    09:23-09:25

    But don't miss Jesus' point.

    09:25-09:31

His point is you don't need somebody to take you to God somebody to pray on your behalf.

    09:31-09:34

You can pray directly to God the Father yourself.

    09:34-09:36

Like, well, why in the world would I have that privilege?

    09:37-09:38

    Oh, look at verse 27.

    09:39-10:07

Jesus said, he says, "For the Father himself loves you "because you have loved me and have believed "that I came from God." Jesus said, "You have the privilege So get out of your head this idea that God's like this mean, angry deity who is so mad at you, but I'm the nice guy.

    10:08-10:12

And he goes, "No, you gotta understand something." Jesus said, "The Father loves you.

    10:12-10:16

"He himself loves you." We're gonna talk more about that in a sec.

    10:17-10:18

    Look at verse 28.

    10:19-10:24

Jesus said, "I came from the Father "and have come into the world.

    10:24-10:31

"And now I'm leaving the world and going to the Father." sums up his whole life story in one sentence.

    10:31-10:32

    Can you do that?

    10:32-10:33

Can you sum up your whole life in one sentence?

    10:34-10:36

That's what Jesus does right here in that verse.

    10:37-10:41

From the Father to the world, now leaving the world back to the Father.

    10:46-10:48

How do the disciples respond to this?

    10:48-10:48

    Look at verse 29.

    10:49-11:05

His disciples said, "Ah, now you're speaking plainly "and not using figurative speech." Look at this, "Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you.

    11:05-11:11

This is why we believe that you came from God." They said, "Oh, now we get it.

    11:11-11:13

Now we get, okay, we get it now.

    11:14-11:20

We know that," first of all, they said, "We know that you're God." Obviously, if you know all things, you have to be God.

    11:21-11:34

But I love that the disciples at this point didn't say, "Oh, okay, Jesus, now we know that you know everything, or now we know that we know everything." Instead they said, "Now we know that you know everything." That's what they got.

    11:34-11:35

That's where the lights came on.

    11:36-11:39

Okay, we've been so thick, but now we get it.

    11:40-11:41

    You know everything.

    11:42-11:47

And maybe that hour of speaking plainly that you were just talking about, maybe that hour is really now.

    11:51-11:51

    Look at verse 31.

    11:53-12:03

Jesus answered them, "Do you not believe?" He affirms their faith where it was in the moment.

    12:05-12:12

He goes on, he says, "Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone.

    12:12-12:23

Yet, I am not alone, for the Father is with me." That's a reference to Zechariah 13.7.

    12:25-12:42

Jesus affirms like, "Yeah, you have faith, "but I need to tell you your faith is weak." And then verse 33, Jesus said, "I've said these things to you "that in me, you may have peace.

    12:43-13:03

"In the world, you will have tribulation, "but take heart, I have overcome the world." Jesus said, "The world will give you tribulation." The Greek word is "phlipsis." It just means distress, meaning, this is what you're going to get from the world, distress.

    13:04-13:05

Can I get a testimony on that?

    13:06-13:11

Anyone, anyone experience distress from the world?

    13:12-13:12

    Anyone?

    13:14-13:14

    Have you been outside?

    13:17-13:21

You're like, "Actually, we're not allowed to go outside." then you're experiencing distress from the world.

    13:23-13:25

But you know what I love about this is Jesus didn't sugarcoat it.

    13:26-13:36

Jesus didn't say, "Listen, every day of Friday." And you know what, let me tell you something.

    13:37-13:42

You know, when you have enough faith, everything is just gonna be so great for you all the time.

    13:44-13:45

    He didn't say that.

    13:46-13:48

Jesus said, "Listen, look right here.

    13:50-13:54

Jesus said, "Hey, hey, hey, the world's going to give you trouble.

    13:55-14:04

Mark that down." So many people are ready to abandon the faith, "I thought things were going to be awesome." Jesus didn't advertise it that way.

    14:07-14:10

He said, "You will have trouble." So often that's left out of the gospel.

    14:12-14:18

Well, you think you're going to come to Christ and the devil's going to be like, "Oh, okay, I lost another one." What?

    14:19-14:25

Jesus says, "Take heart." Literally, that could be translated, "Cheer up." Cheer up!

    14:26-14:27

You know what's interesting about that?

    14:27-14:29

Well, first of all, it's a command, which I think is interesting.

    14:29-14:31

It's not like, "Here's an option for you.

    14:31-14:35

I think maybe you should consider..." This is a command. Jesus says, "No, no, no, no. You cheer up.

    14:36-14:42

You pick your head up." But you know, this command is always and only given by Jesus.

    14:42-14:45

He's the only one that gives us command in the Bible.

    14:47-14:50

He says, "I've overcome the world." That's in the perfect tense.

    14:50-14:52

    That's an abiding victory.

    14:52-14:55

And I got to tell you, that is such an awesome statement.

    14:55-14:59

He said, "I have overcome the world." You know what's so awesome about that?

    14:59-15:09

As I can imagine Jesus saying that after the cross, I can imagine Jesus walking out of the tomb saying, "I have overcome!" He said this before the cross.

    15:10-15:12

Jesus was already declaring his victory.

    15:13-15:18

He goes, "Hey, hey, it's gonna look real dark and real bad, but guess what?

    15:18-15:19

    I've already won.

    15:19-15:30

It is over, as far as I'm concerned, because this has been decreed in eternity past, and I am victorious." So pick your head up.

    15:30-15:31

    I've overcome.

    15:33-15:42

And I look at this passage, church, and this verse especially, that last verse, And I'm just like, man, man, man, man, what encouragement we have here.

    15:44-15:58

I mean, we got Jesus clarifying and speaking plainly, and we got promises concerning prayer, and we got peace because of Jesus' victory.

    15:59-16:03

And I'm like, I read this passage, I'm like, man, this is all good stuff, right?

    16:04-16:06

How would the kids say it?

    16:07-16:10

The kids would say, "Man, it just gets you in the feels, right?

    16:11-16:16

Isn't that what the kids say?" Is that still a thing?

    16:17-16:19

Did I just use a five-year-old reference again?

    16:20-16:22

Like, yeah, Jeff, that was cool in like 2017.

    16:24-16:26

    I'm bringing it back then.

    16:27-16:27

    How about that?

    16:28-16:30

This passage gets me in the feels.

    16:31-16:38

That I'm just like, "Wow." This is awesome.

    16:39-16:45

I have hope and I have peace and I have promises because He has overcome.

    16:46-16:50

He's victorious and He was even before He went to that cross.

    16:51-16:52

    That is just awesome.

    16:55-17:13

You know, I look at this passage and I think, "This is good, but Jesus..." I hate to sound critical here, but here we go.

    17:14-17:25

"Jesus, why did you have to throw in that 'you will all abandon me' part?" I mean, the rest of this stuff is really like positive and you had to, why'd you throw that in?

    17:26-17:26

    Right?

    17:27-17:28

    This was all good.

    17:29-17:34

And we're like, "Eye of the Tiger," and we're celebrating with you.

    17:34-17:36

Why did you gotta throw that in?

    17:36-17:40

This, you know, the day's gonna come that you're gonna scatter and abandon me and...

    17:42-17:43

Why did you have to say that?

    17:47-17:59

But here's the thing, church, that is actually the most encouraging part of the whole passage.

    18:00-18:21

And you're like, "You're going to have to explain that one to me." Get this, Jesus had to tell them that, so that when they fled, they would know that He knew.

    18:25-18:32

And get this, He loved them, even knowing what they were going to do.

    18:35-18:36

See, think about it this way.

    18:36-18:40

Imagine if Jesus didn't say this about the abandoning part.

    18:40-18:41

Imagine if he left that out.

    18:42-18:53

Well then the events transpire and Jesus is arrested and he's taken and the disciples do scatter and go to their houses and then, you know, resurrection and victorious and ascension.

    18:56-18:58

I think the disciples always would have wondered.

    19:00-19:10

"You know, remember when we sat around the table with Jesus and He made us all those promises about loving us, and He made all those promises about prayer, and He made all those promises to us.

    19:10-19:11

    You remember?

    19:11-19:15

Oh yeah, that was awesome." But you know, we royally messed up, guys.

    19:17-19:18

Oh yeah, we did mess up, didn't we?

    19:19-19:20

    Yeah, we royally messed up.

    19:24-19:26

So do you see why it was important for Jesus to tell them?

    19:29-19:30

    I know.

    19:31-19:33

I know what you're going to do.

    19:37-19:39

But church, this is what the disciples needed to learn.

    19:42-19:45

And this is what you need to get straight yourself. Okay?

    19:47-19:48

Because a lot of you are messed up in this area.

    19:49-19:50

And this is a new day.

    19:53-19:54

    Get this straight.

    19:55-19:57

Your life in Christ is not performance-based.

    20:00-20:02

Like, oh, that's why he told that Walmart story.

    20:04-20:06

Your life in Christ is not performance-based.

    20:07-20:16

And I want to acknowledge, church, that it seems that way because it is that way in so many other areas of our lives, true or false.

    20:19-20:26

Don't we feel like that sometimes, married people, that my spouse is only happy with me when I perform properly.

    20:26-20:27

    I mean, not my marriage.

    20:31-20:33

But for a lot of people, isn't that how it feels?

    20:35-20:38

She's only happy with me when I check all the boxes, right?

    20:39-20:42

My husband only seems to care about me when I do what makes him happy.

    20:43-20:44

    Performance-based.

    20:45-20:46

And we take that to the work environment, right?

    20:49-20:55

You know, my boss only really cares about me if I'm doing right, but if I mess up, that's all they care about is my performance.

    20:56-20:57

    That's all they care about.

    20:58-20:59

And we feel like that at school.

    21:00-21:01

    My teacher only cares.

    21:02-21:05

The teacher only seems happy with me if I'm performing well.

    21:05-21:08

That's all they care about is the outcome, the performance.

    21:09-21:15

And sadly, sadly, many children grow up in homes like that.

    21:16-21:24

Mom and dad only really seem happy with me when I'm a good little boy I mess up, boy, they seem like they don't really care for me that much.

    21:27-21:33

But doesn't so much of life seem performance -based?

    21:34-21:35

And here's what we do, church.

    21:36-21:54

We take that mentality into our faith, and we sort of ascribe those characteristics to God, and we say, "God's only happy with me when I'm good, and when I do really good, And I didn't sin very much today, and I tried really hard to do the right thing, and when I do that, God's happy with me.

    21:55-21:59

But when I sin, oh boy, God is ticked off.

    22:00-22:08

And He is mad at me, and He is disappointed in me, and He's looking down on me saying, "What an absolute loser.

    22:08-22:24

I can't even believe that I sent my son for this piece of garbage." But here in this passage, you can't miss this, because I missed it a lot reading this passage, but I'll tell you what, this time it jumped off the page.

    22:25-22:48

That Jesus, right here in this passage is saying to His disciples, "All these things I've been telling you, sitting around the table, all these promises, all the love, all the peace, all the joy, all the victory, all of that is true, even though I know that you are going to completely mess up, the promises are still true.

    22:49-23:05

And he's saying, "Disciples, I want you to remember that." So, to unpack that a little bit on your outline, here's your sermon.

    23:06-23:09

Life in Christ is faith-based, not performance-based.

    23:10-23:17

I wanna just go back and look at a couple things here in this passage, in case there's somebody still on the fence about that.

    23:19-23:20

If you're like, no, I totally get it.

    23:20-23:21

    Okay, you can go.

    23:21-23:23

You can turn off the stream, whatever.

    23:24-23:29

But if you're like, I would like a little more clarification, awesome, because I put a lot of work into this, so.

    23:32-23:36

Look, this is my day of the week to justify getting paid, so I appreciate you paying attention.

    23:37-23:40

    Highlight, highlight, number one.

    23:40-23:43

Life in Christ is faith-based, not performance-based.

    23:43-23:45

    Number one, answered prayers.

    23:46-23:47

Get this straight in our heads, church.

    23:48-23:50

Answered prayers are faith-based, not performance-based.

    23:52-23:53

Go back to verse 26 and 27.

    23:54-24:02

Jesus said, "In that day, you will ask, 'In my name.' And I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf." We're gonna stop there for a second.

    24:04-24:07

    Answered prayers, faith-based, not performance-based.

    24:07-24:16

Now, I do have to say this, though, Because at this point in the message, there's somebody that is hearing this going, "Oh, faith-based, not performance-based.

    24:17-24:18

"It doesn't matter what I do.

    24:19-24:21

"I can sin as much as I want.

    24:21-24:30

"I can do whatever the heck I want, "and it doesn't matter." And I would say, that's spoken like somebody that has not been transformed by Jesus Christ.

    24:31-24:36

That's spoken like somebody who doesn't ever Bible, like ever.

    24:37-24:48

And if you have that attitude, that, "Oh, it doesn't matter," then I would say in a loving way that you are biblically clueless and spiritually dead.

    24:49-24:56

If your attitude is, "Oh, it doesn't matter, "so I'll just live however the heck I wanna live," you're clueless biblically, all right?

    24:56-25:02

And I would doubt your salvation because Jesus changes you and he changes your appetites.

    25:03-25:04

So, okay, we got that out of the way.

    25:05-25:17

But for those of us who have an authentic, but sometimes weak faith, sometimes we fall back into the worldly thinking.

    25:20-25:21

We take it to the spiritual realm.

    25:23-25:32

And we say, if I want God to hear and answer my prayers, I better have all my ducks in a row.

    25:35-25:37

Well, I got a word for you.

    25:39-25:41

Your ducks will never all be in a row.

    25:43-25:43

    Ever.

    25:45-25:51

Have you ever gone through a long season of prayerlessness because you didn't feel worthy to pray?

    25:52-25:52

    Have you ever done that?

    25:52-25:54

Don't raise your hand, but just...

    25:56-25:57

Have you ever gone through that long season?

    25:58-25:59

I don't feel worthy to pray.

    25:59-26:00

    I screwed up.

    26:00-26:01

    I know I screwed up.

    26:01-26:02

    God knows I screwed up.

    26:03-26:05

Hopefully nobody finds out how I screwed up.

    26:06-26:07

I don't even feel worthy to pray.

    26:08-26:09

I feel like such a hypocrite.

    26:10-26:16

I would feel like such a hypocrite to get down and ask God for anything, because I was ashamed of myself for the things that I did.

    26:17-26:18

    You ever felt that?

    26:18-26:19

Don't raise your hand, but have you ever felt that?

    26:20-26:27

I have a feeling every single person in this room and watching this stream has felt that at some point in their lives.

    26:28-26:30

    I'm too embarrassed to pray.

    26:30-26:31

    I'm too ashamed.

    26:31-26:32

    God's not gonna hear me.

    26:35-26:46

Well, I want you to consider a couple of questions here because there might be some people right now that are in that season of their life.

    26:47-26:53

Like, yeah, I haven't prayed in a long time because frankly, it's exactly what you're saying.

    26:54-26:54

    I'm embarrassed.

    26:57-26:59

I feel like a hypocrite to pray and ask God for anything.

    27:00-27:02

I just want you to consider some questions.

    27:04-27:09

When you feel beat down by sin, who can fix that?

    27:11-27:11

    Shout it out.

    27:12-27:13

    Who can fix that?

    27:13-27:13

    Tell me.

    27:14-27:15

    Jesus, right?

    27:18-27:24

Who, more than anybody else in the universe, wants to see you get to a better place in your walk?

    27:24-27:25

    Tell me.

    27:26-27:26

    Jesus.

    27:29-27:33

Who would want to see you avoid prayer?

    27:33-27:34

    Shout it out.

    27:35-27:37

    Satan, right?

    27:38-27:42

Who would want you to try to fix yourself before you went to prayer?

    27:42-27:43

Who would want you to do that?

    27:45-27:45

    That's Satan.

    27:47-27:49

So do you see where I'm going with this?

    27:51-27:52

    Where Jesus went with this.

    27:52-27:55

Verse 26, we're invited to pray in Jesus' name.

    27:56-27:57

You know, we talk about that.

    27:57-28:01

We think it's this little magic phrase at the end of a prayer, you know, in Jesus name.

    28:01-28:05

It's like, you know, Alakazam, I said the magic word.

    28:06-28:07

That's not what that is at all.

    28:08-28:11

You're saying I'm not coming to you, God, based on my merit.

    28:11-28:15

I'm not coming to you as if Jeff deserves anything from you.

    28:15-28:22

I'm coming to you because Jesus Christ told me to come to you in his name.

    28:24-28:27

Access to God was purchased by Jesus.

    28:28-28:32

Access to God is based on the blood of Jesus, not my blood.

    28:34-28:39

So I'm gonna give you something right now that will change your life because it changed mine.

    28:41-28:52

If you're struggling with sin, and specifically here, you're struggling to pray because of your sin, here's what I want you to do.

    28:52-28:54

I want you to get alone with the Lord.

    28:54-29:00

I want you to get on your face, And I want you to start your prayer with something like this, okay?

    29:01-29:05

Doesn't have to be verbatim, but you can get the spirit of what I'm about to tell you here.

    29:06-29:07

But start your prayer like this.

    29:08-29:13

Get on your face when you feel beaten down, I don't deserve to pray, God shouldn't listen to me.

    29:14-29:15

    Get on your face.

    29:17-29:18

    Pray something like this first.

    29:19-29:21

Say, Father, I come to you by your invitation.

    29:22-29:30

Father, I know that I am unworthy on my own, So I thank you that you provided the way for me through Jesus.

    29:30-29:34

I believe your word that He provided the way to you.

    29:36-29:37

Start your prayer with something like that.

    29:38-29:39

    Acknowledge this before God.

    29:41-29:44

Say, "I know God in and of myself, I am insufficient.

    29:45-29:50

But my sufficiency is not in myself, it's in Christ." Then get praying.

    29:53-29:56

Because answered prayer is faith-based, not performance-based, all right?

    29:59-30:01

Number two, God's love for you.

    30:04-30:06

    God's love for you, faith-based, not performance-based.

    30:08-30:15

Again, verse 27, Jesus says, "For the Father himself loves you." Like, well, why would he love me?

    30:18-30:19

We'll talk about that in a second.

    30:19-30:25

But as soon as we hear God loves you, Somebody would say, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear you.

    30:26-30:28

I hear you, yeah, God loves me, yeah.

    30:29-30:32

But you know, Jeff, doesn't God love everybody?

    30:33-30:43

I mean, if everybody's special, doesn't that mean that nobody's special?" And I would say, first of all, that's from the Incredibles, that's not from the Bible.

    30:46-30:48

And second of all, I would say, hold on a second.

    30:51-30:56

Because the Greek word for love in this verse is phileo.

    30:58-30:59

    That's personal affection.

    31:00-31:05

And that's different than John 3.16, "For God so loved the world." That's agape.

    31:08-31:10

The difference is phileo is personal.

    31:11-31:13

    Like, what's it like?

    31:14-31:15

    Well, parents, it's like this.

    31:16-31:19

It's the kind of love you have for your children that you don't have for other people's children.

    31:21-31:26

I mean, I'm sure knowing the families in this church, you'd be like, "Yeah, I love other people's kids." Right?

    31:27-31:30

The kids all get together and they do their harvest kids thing and they go to school together.

    31:31-31:32

    I love other people's kids.

    31:32-31:35

You do not love other people's kids the way you love your own kids.

    31:35-31:36

    True or false?

    31:36-31:37

    The answer is true.

    31:40-31:42

So how do we receive this love?

    31:44-31:46

God has this personal affection for us.

    31:47-31:54

We receive this love by our performance, like we do really good and we try really hard and that's why God loves us.

    31:54-31:55

    Is that what Jesus said?

    31:56-31:57

    Look at verse 27 again.

    31:58-32:12

He says, "The Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God." Jesus said it's because we love Him and we believe in Him.

    32:12-32:14

    It's faith-based, not performance-based.

    32:14-32:18

You love Jesus, you're loved by the Father, right?

    32:19-32:20

    And I get that.

    32:21-32:22

    And parents, you get that.

    32:22-32:24

Don't you love people that love your kids?

    32:25-32:30

If somebody shows affection or kindness towards your kids, don't you love that person?

    32:31-32:32

    That means something to you.

    32:32-32:34

    "He cares about my kids.

    32:34-32:42

That means a lot to me." And I can't tell you, I can't even begin to tell you the way so many people in this church I've reached out and loved my kids.

    32:42-32:47

And what that does for the way that I care about those people, like man, that means a lot to me that he reached out to my kid.

    32:47-32:50

It means a lot to me that Dan and Alicia invested my kid.

    32:50-32:52

That means so much to me.

    32:54-32:55

You love people that love your kids.

    32:55-32:56

And Jesus is saying the same thing.

    32:57-32:59

You know the Father, He loves you because you love me.

    33:02-33:04

You're like, well, I don't understand the connection.

    33:05-33:06

    I'll tell you the connection.

    33:08-33:10

because through Jesus we're adopted as children of God.

    33:10-33:11

    That's why.

    33:12-33:16

Remember that you love your own kids more than you love other people's kids in a different way, remember that?

    33:18-33:31

We'll see John 1.12 says, "To those who received Jesus, "to those who believed in his name, "he gave them the right to become children of God." We are adopted by God through Jesus.

    33:34-33:40

In other words, God has a personal affection for you as his child that he does not have for people who don't know him.

    33:43-33:46

And he loves you because you love and believe in his son.

    33:46-33:49

    In other words, it's faith-based, not performance-based.

    33:51-33:55

    And finally today, peace.

    33:57-34:00

    Faith-based, not performance-based.

    34:00-34:01

    Look at verse 33 again.

    34:04-34:18

Jesus said, "I've said these things to you." Now, I want you to look at these next two statements here, because you're going to very clearly see these are parallel statements.

    34:18-34:20

And that's very important for us to understand.

    34:22-34:23

    Here's the first one.

    34:24-34:31

In me, you may have peace.

    34:33-34:40

Here's the parallel statement, in the world, you will have tribulation.

    34:42-34:43

    Do you see the contrast?

    34:45-34:47

There's a contrast of in me versus in the world.

    34:47-34:50

There's a contrast of you may have versus you will have.

    34:51-34:53

There's a contrast of peace versus tribulation.

    34:57-35:01

Well, we could spend a long time on this, but I just want us to look at that middle contrast.

    35:03-35:07

Jesus said when it comes to being in the world, you will have tribulation.

    35:08-35:13

In other words, we all live in the world and tribulation is the default status.

    35:16-35:18

In other words, everyone's got problems.

    35:18-35:20

    Everyone's got problems.

    35:22-35:25

But you don't have to live consumed by your problems.

    35:26-35:28

You don't have to live stressed out.

    35:29-35:35

You will have trouble in the world, but you see, Jesus said, you may have peace in Him.

    35:37-35:39

    Meaning not everybody has it.

    35:41-35:45

But it's for the people that will believe in Him and come to Him for it.

    35:46-35:46

    See the difference?

    35:49-35:51

That's why Jesus commands us to cheer up.

    35:52-35:59

Not because we have the power to overcome, but because He has overcome.

    36:00-36:05

And by faith, His victory is our victory.

    36:08-36:13

By faith, church, we see the cross as Jesus saw the cross.

    36:16-36:20

Jesus wasn't some martyr that was executed.

    36:21-36:30

He was the Lamb of God, offering up His life to pay for my sin.

    36:33-36:38

He was the Lamb of God who shed His blood so that I wouldn't have to.

    36:42-36:49

So Jesus, through the cross, us by faith appropriating that victory.

    36:49-36:56

We are victorious because Jesus defeated Satan through his own death.

    36:58-37:00

So church, you have to catch this.

    37:02-37:03

    Peace isn't performance based.

    37:07-37:10

Oh, granted, you may feel more at peace.

    37:11-37:17

You may feel more of the victory of Jesus when you're in a good place in your walk.

    37:17-37:17

    Absolutely.

    37:19-37:36

You might feel it, but what we need to highlight here, the disciples were promised that their mess ups weren't going to derail Jesus' victory.

    37:38-37:52

And because our mess ups cannot and did not derail Jesus' victory, that also means our Our mess-ups can't derail the peace that we have in His victory.

    37:54-37:56

I have to ask you, where's your peace?

    37:57-38:00

Have you been trying to find your peace in your ability to cope?

    38:03-38:05

Or have you found your peace in the victory of Jesus Christ?

    38:08-38:10

Because only one of those paths will take you to peace.

    38:13-38:16

Jesus' victory started officially on the cross.

    38:18-38:23

Jesus' victory continued through the empty tomb that He walked out on.

    38:23-38:28

Jesus' victory continues as He's alive and active in His church today.

    38:29-38:36

And Jesus' victory is ultimately going to be consummated because He is coming back and He is coming soon.

    38:36-38:42

And it is going to be the victory party of eternity when He does.

    38:44-38:54

And you're like, "Yeah, you know what Pastor Jeff, I thought this sermon was about victory, but it seems like you spent most of the time talking about faith.

    38:55-39:06

You know, maybe I was on a website and I saw that you were going to talk about victory and that's what I was fired up for, but really you spent most of the time talking about faith today." All right, then I'll close with this.

    39:08-39:24

First John chapter 5 verses 4 and 5 says, "For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world." And this is the victory that has overcome the world, our faith.

    39:26-39:34

Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

    39:36-39:41

    Your victory is faith-based, it's not performance-based.

    39:43-39:43

    Let's pray.

    39:44-39:55

Father in heaven, I just want to close this time and ask God that Your Spirit would renew our minds.

    39:56-40:07

Your Word tells us that we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, and Father, So many of us try to take a performance-based mindset into faith issues.

    40:10-40:20

But Father, we see very clearly here in this passage that Jesus knows ahead of time, even before we mess up, Jesus knows how badly we're going to screw things up.

    40:21-40:23

And your Word says He loves us anyways.

    40:23-40:25

    The promises are true anyways.

    40:26-40:33

the promises of prayer and peace and everything he wants to give us, Father, are things that he provided.

    40:33-40:37

So I pray, Father, for renewal of minds, and Father, I pray for repentance.

    40:38-40:58

That for those of us who have maybe, those of us who have been having a little standoff with you, maybe because we haven't felt worthy, we felt ashamed, I pray, Father, that we would stop being so arrogant to think that our performance merits our presence with you.

    41:00-41:03

But instead, it's the cross of Jesus Christ that provided that entrance.

    41:04-41:07

Our performance didn't tear that curtain in the temple.

    41:10-41:11

    The death of Jesus did.

    41:13-41:22

Father, by faith, by faith, let us embrace everything that you have for us.

    41:25-41:35

We pray to you directly as Jesus commanded, as he invited, in his name.

    41:36-41:36

    Amen.

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Why did Jesus, in the midst of all these promises, tell the disciples that they would scatter and abandon Him? (John 16:32)

  3. Why do so many Christians think that prayer, God's love, and peace are all performance-based things with God? What does Jesus say about that?

  4. Have you ever been reluctant to pray because you were struggling with a sin of some kind? How did you get out of that rut?

    John 16, are you there?

    00:02-00:08

If you're still turning there, several years ago, I went to visit someone in the hospital.

    00:10-00:26

And upon leaving, I got on the elevator, and there was this young blonde woman, I would guess probably in her mid to late 20s, and she was on the elevator, and her eyes were red and swollen like she had been crying.

    00:27-00:33

I step onto the elevator, and the door is shut, and my mind starts racing.

    00:34-00:35

I wonder what happened to this woman.

    00:36-00:41

I mean, obviously, she's leaving the hospital since she's on the elevator heading to the ground floor as I am because she didn't hit a different floor.

    00:41-00:48

Did she come to find out that maybe she has a husband or a boyfriend that was in a motorcycle accident?

    00:49-00:50

    Maybe it was something else.

    00:50-00:56

Or maybe she came to see a father or a grandfather who's having heart problems, and the doctor said things aren't looking good.

    00:56-01:00

And my mind is just racing a thousand miles an hour, all these scenarios.

    01:00-01:02

I'm like, well, I gotta say something, but what am I gonna say?

    01:02-01:05

Because we only have like, how long does it take the elevator to get to the bottom floor?

    01:05-01:06

I mean, it's not a very big hospital.

    01:06-01:07

I mean, I have a matter of seconds.

    01:07-01:08

What am I gonna say to her in a matter of seconds?

    01:09-01:11

And I'm gonna look like such a creep 'cause she doesn't know I'm a pastor.

    01:11-01:15

I'm just like Joe Random that gets on the elevator and I'm trying to get in her business.

    01:15-01:16

And I'm like, I gotta do something.

    01:16-01:16

    I gotta say something.

    01:17-01:17

    What am I gonna say?

    01:18-01:23

So finally, like, that's how, this is how my mind works just for the inside peak there.

    01:24-01:42

And I'm like, I said, "Look, I..." Right when I opened my mouth, she went, "I'm an aunt!" And I said, "Congratulations, I am so happy for you." And then we went on our merry way.

    01:45-01:50

And it just goes to show you, you know, sometimes you just don't know what's going on.

    01:51-02:08

You're like, "Well, why are you telling us this story today?" Well, this is a story of wanting to comfort someone, and a story of confusion, and it's a story of joy, and it's a story of childbirth, and all of those elements are in our passage today.

    02:09-02:25

And if you're just joining us, you know, in this passage in John, Jesus sits down with the disciples and He goes, "Amen, I'm leaving." But you don't need to worry, because you're going to have all of the resources of heaven and God's Holy Spirit coming in and dwelling.

    02:25-02:27

It's going to be okay. It's going to be great.

    02:27-02:37

In fact, it's going to be better than I go." And Jesus says, "In the meantime, you need to love one another.

    02:37-02:39

The way that I've loved you, we've seen over and over and over.

    02:39-02:47

Love, love, love. You've got to love one another, church." Why? Jesus said, "Because you're going to get hatred from the world.

    02:47-02:49

They hated me, they're going to hate you.

    02:49-02:51

So make sure you love one another.

    02:53-02:57

Then last week, Jesus, we saw He laid out the strategy.

    02:57-02:59

This is God's strategy for reaching the world.

    03:00-03:03

It was Jesus' strategy from day one, and it hasn't changed.

    03:03-03:04

    Here's the strategy.

    03:04-03:13

I'm going to put my Spirit in my people, and my people are going to go out, and God's Spirit is going to convict the world through God's authoritative Word.

    03:13-03:14

    Jesus, that's my strategy.

    03:15-03:17

That's what He's been doing, and it's working.

    03:18-03:19

    It's working.

    03:19-03:21

So we're going to stick with it.

    03:23-03:41

But we saw, leading to the passage today, that Jesus said to the disciples, "I've got so much more I've got to tell you." He says, "But I can't tell you right now. Why can't you?" Jesus said it was because the disciples were filled with sorrow.

    03:42-03:44

And you kind of get that, don't you?

    03:44-03:48

Have you ever been talking to someone, trying to share something, and they weren't listening?

    03:49-03:58

like at all, whether they're distracted on their phone watching TV, or like in this case, you can just tell they're tuned out.

    03:58-04:00

There's sorrow or something going on.

    04:00-04:05

And have you ever like, like you keep talking long after people are done listening.

    04:05-04:06

Has that ever happened to you?

    04:07-04:09

That happens to me every week.

    04:10-04:11

    (audience laughing)

    04:12-04:16

So maybe I should, maybe I should adopt the Jesus approach here to be like, you know what?

    04:16-04:46

There's stuff I got to tell you, ready for it. So I'll tell you later. But in this particular case, Jesus said, "You're so overwhelmed with sorrow." He says literally, "You're filled with sorrow." That word fulfilled means it crowds everything else out. You are so consumed with sorrow, you're not hearing a word that I'm saying. So instead of telling them the more, Jesus, we're going to see in this passage, again as we've seen many many times, He comforts them.

    04:46-04:51

And I've told you before, the ironic thing is, they should be comforting Him.

    04:52-04:53

Which one of them was going to the cross?

    04:54-04:55

    Oh yes, Jesus.

    04:55-04:58

Which one of them was going to suffer the most horrible death known to man?

    04:58-04:59

    Jesus.

    04:59-05:01

Which one of them was about to bear the wrath of God?

    05:02-05:02

    Yes, Jesus.

    05:03-05:05

They should have been coming around Him and comforting Him.

    05:06-05:07

    And He's comforting them.

    05:07-05:09

And do you see how backwards that is?

    05:09-05:13

It would be like if you went to the hospital to see a friend of yours who's dying of cancer.

    05:14-05:28

and you go and you're at their bedside, and they look up at you and they say, "Hey, I don't have much time left, I'm dying." And you just lean down and say to them, "Can we get the spotlight off of you for a while?

    05:28-05:34

"Because what am I gonna do when I'm sad that you're gone?" I mean, do you see how crazy that is?

    05:35-05:36

    That's what we have here.

    05:36-05:38

    Jesus comforting the disciples.

    05:41-05:42

    But here's the thing.

    05:43-05:48

We know from God's Word that it's one of God's favorite things to comfort His people.

    05:48-05:50

God loves to comfort His people.

    05:50-05:51

Well, how do you know that?

    05:51-05:55

Well, God the Son, Jesus, He's called the merciful and sympathetic High Priest, right?

    05:56-06:01

And God the Father is called the 2 Corinthians 1, the God of all comfort, right?

    06:01-06:06

And Jesus literally called the Holy Spirit the Comforter, right?

    06:06-06:09

So God loves to comfort His people.

    06:11-06:21

And He's able to comfort unlike anyone else, because He's always with us, He knows the future, and He sovereignly controls all things.

    06:23-06:31

And He promises - we see in this passage today, verse 22, He says, "No one will take your joy from you." That's a promise.

    06:31-06:32

He says, "You're going to have joy.

    06:34-06:39

My people are going to have joy." And He says, "Nobody's going to be able to take that from you." So here's the question on the table today.

    06:40-06:43

Why are so many Christians so joyless?

    06:43-06:44

    Why is that?

    06:44-07:09

I mean, if we step back and objectively look at the scenario here, what we see is we are a people - if God's Word is true, and I believe that it is - but we are a people that we have God's Spirit, we have God's promises, we have a description of everything that's happening around us right now, and we have an outline for the future of what's going to happen, including the glorious restoration of all things.

    07:09-07:14

And you put all of these things together, and it's a recipe for perfect joy.

    07:15-07:26

But somehow, church, look, myself included, but somehow we have this tendency to get swept up with the world.

    07:27-07:35

And we go right along with the world and the things that are causing them anxiety, and panic, and joylessness, right?

    07:35-07:45

And we've talked about these things before, you know, things like the pandemic and, you know, vaccinations and vaccination passports, and politics and the economy.

    07:46-07:54

And shouldn't, for us as Christians, shouldn't our attitudes and thoughts towards those things be completely different than the world's?

    07:55-07:56

    Shouldn't we stand out?

    07:58-08:05

Shouldn't the world be looking at us, saying, "I wish that I had the kind of peace and joy that that guy has.

    08:05-08:08

I wish that I was as content and calm as she is.

    08:09-08:10

Shouldn't the world be looking at us like that?

    08:12-08:14

Well, we're going to go through trials.

    08:15-08:18

But knowing Jesus puts a joy in us that cannot be removed.

    08:19-08:23

So here's the thing, you can't lose the joy, but you can lose sight of it.

    08:24-08:32

So in your outline today, if you're writing things down, which I always encourage, "Why do I lose sight of my joy in Christ?" That's the question.

    08:33-08:34

Why do I lose sight of my joy in Christ?

    08:35-08:38

And knowing this is going to help us get it back into focus.

    08:39-08:40

All right? Are you with me?

    08:42-08:44

Are you with me? I can start over.

    08:45-08:48

I heard somebody say, "We're good." Okay. All right.

    08:49-08:52

I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.

    08:53-08:54

All right. Why do I lose sight of my joy in Christ?

    08:55-08:57

Number one, because of my ignorance.

    08:58-08:59

    Because of my ignorance.

    09:01-09:02

    Look at verses 16-18.

    09:03-09:15

Jesus says, "A little while and you will see me no longer, and again a little while and you will see me." So some of His disciples said to one another, "What is this that He says to us?

    09:15-09:25

A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me, because I am going to the Father?" So they were saying, "What does He mean by a little while?

    09:25-09:37

We do not know what He is talking about." Okay, so let's admittedly here, admittedly, it's a confusing statement.

    09:38-09:41

And Jesus rolls this out. He goes, "Okay, listen, guys, I gotta tell you something.

    09:42-09:43

In a little while, you're not gonna see me.

    09:43-09:45

And again, a little while, you are gonna see me.

    09:46-10:03

We good?" And the disciples were like, "Um, okay." And then they apparently have this like side conversation like, "Did you get that?" "No, I didn't get that." "Did you get that?" "No, I was..." We don't know what he's talking about And did you see in particular what phrase were they hung up on?

    10:04-10:13

Well phrase where they hung up on did you see it a little while right there hung up on a little while I think I can wait wait wait wait wait. Okay, Jesus. I can we believe he's the Messiah. We're sold on that right?

    10:13-10:29

He's the Messiah, but if he came Didn't he didn't he want to establish his kingdom right and that's why the Messiah is here to establish the kingdom If that's why he's here And why is he leaving?

    10:29-10:33

And if he's not here to establish the kingdom, then why is he coming back?

    10:34-10:41

So if he's leaving, and if he's coming back, then why?

    10:45-10:49

But you know, church, when we're suffering with something, they ask the question that we all ask.

    10:51-10:53

And it's how long? How long?

    10:53-10:56

Do you notice that's the thing that they got caught up on?

    10:57-10:58

That's the thing that we get caught up on.

    10:59-10:59

    How long?

    11:00-11:00

    How long?

    11:02-11:08

We're going through this trial, whatever it is, whether it's a health thing or a physical thing or a relationship thing, okay, this is really hard.

    11:09-11:11

I don't like this at all.

    11:11-11:20

I hate this and I know I've got to get through this, but how much longer is it going to be part of my life?

    11:20-11:23

How much longer am I going to have to go through this?

    11:23-11:24

    How long?

    11:25-11:31

Because like the disciples, so often what we need is the light at the end of the tunnel, right?

    11:31-11:32

    Doesn't that make the difference?

    11:33-11:36

If you know like, hey, at this point it's gonna be over.

    11:36-11:37

At this point it's gonna be behind me.

    11:38-11:39

At this point I'm gonna be done with this trial.

    11:40-11:41

    Doesn't that make the difference?

    11:41-11:42

    Like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

    11:42-11:43

    That's the finish line.

    11:43-11:45

Then I can see, okay, I can make it to there.

    11:45-11:49

The problem is when we don't see the finish line, like how much longer am I gonna have to deal with this?

    11:50-11:51

Because I don't know if I can deal with this forever.

    11:54-12:05

Proverbs 13.12 says, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick." And that's the ultimate agony, is when we have lack of hope.

    12:07-12:08

When we don't see the finish line.

    12:09-12:14

So in this passage here, the disciples, they can't see the finish line.

    12:14-12:16

They can't see the light at the end of the tunnel.

    12:16-12:30

So Jesus shows them by saying, "Again in a little while, everything's going to change." And sometimes we just don't get it because we can't see it.

    12:30-12:36

And if we're honest, church, we're more like the disciples than we care to admit.

    12:37-12:42

Because sometimes we're full of sorrow because we don't understand something that Jesus said.

    12:43-12:45

And the problem's not on His end.

    12:46-12:49

The problem isn't with what He said, the problem is our lack of understanding.

    12:49-12:51

And we're just like the disciples.

    12:52-12:53

    "I don't get it. I don't understand.

    12:53-12:59

What does He mean? I don't know." And that's really their whole story in this chunk of John that we're in.

    12:59-13:07

They're filled with sorrow because Jesus said that they won't see Him, and then they will see Him, and they couldn't conceptualize what He was saying.

    13:08-13:11

And I was reading this, and I'm like, "Oh, you know, I so relate to that.

    13:12-13:21

Sometimes Jesus says something, and I don't understand what He means, and I don't understand what He's saying.

    13:21-13:31

And if only I was thinking - walk with me on this - I was thinking, if only there was something that I could hold on to until I understand.

    13:32-13:54

If only there was something that I had that I could embrace and hold on to and sort of cling to - in those moments that I don't understand, in those moments that I want to trust God, but nothing makes sense, that I can't put the pieces together, if only I had something to hold on to.

    13:54-13:58

And then I realized, that's faith, right?

    13:59-14:00

    Isn't that what faith is?

    14:00-14:10

Faith is that thing that we hold on to, when we say, "I don't understand, and I'm sorrowful, and I'm upset, and I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel." but God, You promised.

    14:11-14:12

    You promised good things.

    14:12-14:13

You promised to be with me.

    14:13-14:14

You promised to take care of me.

    14:15-14:16

You promised to provide for me.

    14:16-14:18

    So I'm holding on.

    14:20-14:20

    That's faith.

    14:23-14:31

And the ironic thing about this is the disciples had the exact information that they were looking for, because it was the very words that they were hung up on.

    14:31-14:32

    A little while.

    14:33-14:35

A little while. This doesn't make sense.

    14:35-14:35

    When will it make sense?

    14:36-14:38

How are we going to know what Jesus is talking about?

    14:38-14:43

I get an idea, why don't you wait a little while and see what He means.

    14:44-14:50

And sometimes, church, all that stands between you and God's promise is a little bit of time.

    14:52-14:59

And instead of being sorrowful when we don't understand, Jesus calls us to walk in joy while we wait on Him.

    14:59-15:02

So sometimes, church, we lose sight of our joy because of our ignorance.

    15:03-15:10

And I would encourage you in those times that you don't get it, you don't understand, It's faith is what we cling to, right?

    15:11-15:13

We walk by faith, not by sight.

    15:13-15:16

Number two, why do I lose sight of my joy in Christ?

    15:16-15:18

Because I'm not looking at the big picture.

    15:18-15:19

    Look at verse 19.

    15:20-15:40

"Jesus knew that they wanted to ask Him, so He said to them, 'Is this what you're asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, 'A little while and you will not see Me, and again a little while and you will see Me?' Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice.

    15:40-15:44

You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.

    15:45-15:45

    I'll stop there.

    15:45-15:46

    OK, so here's a question.

    15:46-15:48

OK, what is Jesus talking about?

    15:49-15:52

And I did a lot of reading this past week from a lot of people, really smart.

    15:53-15:55

What was Jesus talking about this little while?

    15:55-15:57

You're not going to see me again a little while and you are going to see me.

    15:57-16:00

And there were some that were like, well, obviously he's talking about the resurrection.

    16:00-16:08

that he's going to die, sorrow, resurrection, appear to them after the resurrection, and that's what he's talking about.

    16:09-16:18

And some people say, "No, no, no, no, he's talking about his second coming." Like, you know, okay, there's going away, that's obviously the death and ascension.

    16:19-16:20

They would tie that into that.

    16:20-16:25

And it's when he returns, Revelation 19, that is the seeing again thing.

    16:25-16:27

And I don't think either of those are right.

    16:28-16:29

    I'm going to explain.

    16:29-16:30

    Here's what he's talking about.

    16:30-16:34

The most straightforward understanding of this passage is this.

    16:35-16:38

Jesus is talking about the coming of the Holy Spirit.

    16:38-16:41

Hang on, I'm going to explain this.

    16:41-16:43

He's talking about the coming of the Holy Spirit.

    16:44-17:04

In essence, what Jesus is saying is, "I will die and I will return and indwell you as God's Holy Spirit, and then you will see me, then you will experience my presence like never before." "Well, where did you come up with that?" Well, there's a couple of things going on here.

    17:04-17:12

First of all, back in verse 17, they tied Jesus' statement with, "A little while you'll not see Me, and again a little while you will see Me." Do you see in verse 17?

    17:12-17:18

They added another statement to this cluster of confusing sentences.

    17:18-17:28

They're like, "What does He mean by 'because I am going to the Father'?" So they were connecting this with His exaltation at the right hand of God, yes.

    17:29-17:30

We talked about that last week.

    17:30-17:33

We talked about that back in chapter 14, verses 17 and 18.

    17:34-17:40

But here's something that we don't readily see that I wanna try to help explain.

    17:41-17:43

Verse 16 again, look at the statement of Jesus.

    17:45-17:47

Jesus said, "A little while, you will see me no longer.

    17:48-17:58

And again, a little while, and you will see me." Now something ironically that you can't see is In the Greek, there's two different words for see.

    17:59-18:02

The first word refers to seeing something physically.

    18:03-18:08

And the second word is perceiving something, or we could say seeing it spiritually.

    18:11-18:19

And we do that all the time, but the problem with the English language is we just use the word see, and our minds have to do the gymnastics to make sense of it.

    18:19-18:19

    Here's what I mean.

    18:20-18:22

Like if I said to you, "Hey, we're having a prayer meeting.

    18:23-18:24

We're having a prayer meeting coming up.

    18:25-18:26

    And hey, guess what?

    18:26-18:27

You're gonna get to see my friend.

    18:28-18:33

And when he comes to the prayer meeting, you're going to see he is a powerful prayer.

    18:33-18:35

Now, did you see how I use see two different ways there?

    18:36-18:38

You're going to see him when he comes, you're going to like see him.

    18:39-18:45

And when he comes, you're going to see that he is a power, you're going to perceive what a powerful prayer he is.

    18:46-18:50

And that's the sense in which Jesus is using the word see here.

    18:51-19:08

It fits the context of this passage, because this whole discourse since chapter 13 is telling the disciples, "I'm leaving, the Holy Spirit's coming, I'm leaving, the Holy Spirit's coming." And when you put the Greek verbiage here, it seems to me that Jesus is talking specifically here about the coming of the Holy Spirit.

    19:09-19:16

Like, "I'm leaving, but you're going to know that I'm back when My Spirit indwells you." God's Holy Spirit.

    19:18-19:20

Here's something that kind of troubles us.

    19:20-19:34

Jesus gives this explanation to the disciples, but did you notice Jesus in his explanation doesn't describe for them what will happen, but he describes how they're going to respond to what's going to happen.

    19:34-19:35

    Did you catch that?

    19:36-19:48

The disciples were like, "Okay, you know, they get this little wow and again and a little wow, we don't understand what he's talking about." I would expect an answer to a question like that to be something like, "All right, well, let me give you a timeline, and let's get up the whiteboard.

    19:49-19:50

Okay, here's where we are now.

    19:51-19:52

Okay, and then here's the cross.

    19:52-19:58

And I expected like some drawing up the football play thing from Jesus.

    19:59-20:01

But he didn't do that at all.

    20:02-20:08

He's like, I'm gonna tell you how you're gonna, how all this stuff that's coming, I wanna tell you how it's gonna affect you.

    20:08-20:10

Because listen, here's all you need to know, disciples.

    20:11-20:16

Jesus said, what you need to know is that your sorrow is going to become joy.

    20:17-20:17

That's all you need to know.

    20:19-20:20

That's all you need to know.

    20:20-20:21

Your sorrow is going to become joy.

    20:22-20:23

    Can you explain that?

    20:25-20:26

Well, yeah, he does. Look at v. 21.

    20:27-20:29

    Jesus gives an illustration.

    20:30-20:34

Jesus says, "When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come.

    20:35-20:45

But when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish for joy that a human being has been born into the world.

    20:46-20:56

"Also, you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you." Stop there.

    20:56-20:59

Jesus gives an illustration that we all understand on some level.

    21:01-21:06

Whether it's personally, or whether it's secondhand.

    21:08-21:11

Even if you haven't had a baby yourself, I imagine you've been born.

    21:12-21:13

    Probably don't remember that.

    21:15-21:17

Jesus' illustration here is a woman having a baby.

    21:19-21:20

    Now, childbirth.

    21:21-21:22

    Oh, childbirth.

    21:23-21:28

World famous as the worst pain a human being can go through.

    21:29-21:30

    True or false?

    21:32-21:32

    False!

    21:36-21:39

I want for the record to point out that I'm not saying false.

    21:41-21:44

I'm going to go on record to say I've never been through it.

    21:44-21:47

I'm just going to take your word for it, ladies.

    21:48-21:52

I've heard that it is the worst pain a human can experience.

    21:52-21:56

Actually, I've also heard that breaking your tibia is worse.

    21:59-21:59

    There's your femur?

    22:00-22:00

    Yeah, your femur.

    22:01-22:02

    Which one's your tibia?

    22:02-22:03

    I don't know.

    22:03-22:05

But breaking your leg bone, how about that?

    22:05-22:07

Breaking one of your leg bone, yeah, maybe it's your femur.

    22:08-22:09

'Cause there's just one up here.

    22:09-22:09

    Is this your femur?

    22:10-22:10

    Okay.

    22:11-22:12

All right, I heard that's worse.

    22:13-22:14

    This isn't in my notes.

    22:15-22:16

We're going off track a little bit here.

    22:17-22:21

But even if I broke my femur, I still wouldn't say that that's worst pain than childbirth.

    22:22-22:23

    All right?

    22:24-22:26

And I would commend that to you.

    22:26-22:27

Where in the world were we?

    22:29-22:30

    All right.

    22:30-22:33

For you naysayers, can we at least acknowledge there's some pain involved?

    22:34-22:35

    Can we acknowledge that?

    22:35-22:36

    All right.

    22:38-22:39

    So here's the question.

    22:40-22:40

    Here's the question.

    22:41-22:45

Why in the world would a woman knowingly go through so much pain?

    22:47-22:51

If it's notoriously painful, why would a woman go through so much pain?

    22:52-22:53

    Why would that happen?

    22:53-22:54

    Somebody tell me.

    22:54-22:55

    A baby.

    22:57-22:58

That's why a woman would go through that pain.

    22:59-23:05

Did you ever notice that when a couple announces they're pregnant, we're always so happy for them?

    23:05-23:05

    Did you ever notice that?

    23:06-23:07

    That's like the default response.

    23:07-23:10

A couple comes and they're like, "Hey, guess what, Pastor Jeff?

    23:10-23:11

    We're pregnant.

    23:11-23:12

    I'm like, yay!

    23:13-23:17

And then they go around to the other people that chose, hey, we're pregnant, yay!

    23:17-23:19

Do you ever notice our default response is happiness?

    23:20-23:24

But if it's as painful as people say it is, why isn't our response sorrow?

    23:26-23:27

Huh, why don't we ever do that?

    23:27-23:30

Like a couple comes and they're like, hey, guess what, we're having a baby.

    23:30-23:33

And we're like, I'm so sorry.

    23:34-23:35

    Like, why are you sorry?

    23:36-23:37

    Because I heard it's painful.

    23:38-23:39

    and it's so awesome.

    23:40-23:43

You're going to be in such horrible pain from the childbirth.

    23:43-23:45

I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.

    23:46-23:47

    I am so sorry.

    23:47-23:48

    Thoughts and prayers. Truly.

    23:48-23:49

    Thoughts and prayers.

    23:49-23:53

And I am so sorry to hear that you're having a baby.

    23:53-23:54

    I am so sorry.

    23:55-23:56

Of course we never do that.

    23:57-24:00

And yes, giving birth gives anguish.

    24:00-24:01

    That's what Jesus pointed out.

    24:01-24:08

But as soon as the baby's born, Jesus also points out and she no longer remembers the anguish.

    24:09-24:19

Okay, so how in the world does she go from the world's worst pain to forgetting about the world's worst pain in a matter of seconds?

    24:19-24:20

    How does that happen?

    24:22-24:24

She's holding a baby. That's how that happens.

    24:26-24:38

And that's the principle that Jesus is giving His disciples to say, "Listen, the same thing that gives you anguish and sorrow, The same thing is ultimately going to give you joy.

    24:39-24:58

The pain that you experience when you see your Lord and your God nailed to a cross and crucified and publicly shamed and executed - that is going to turn into your greatest joy when this is all fulfilled and His Spirit is living in you and empowering you.

    24:58-25:05

And I love this because notice Jesus says this isn't merely a sequence, Meaning, joy comes after sorrow.

    25:05-25:06

    He didn't say that.

    25:07-25:10

Like you're going to have sorrow, and then you're going to have joy.

    25:10-25:12

    He doesn't say it's a sequence.

    25:12-25:15

Nor does he say it's like some addition.

    25:15-25:21

Like you're going to have sorrow, but then the joy comes, and it kind of eclipses the sorrow.

    25:22-25:23

    He didn't say that either.

    25:23-25:25

What he's saying really is a consequence.

    25:26-25:31

That the sorrow will be the thing that causes joy.

    25:33-25:34

    See the difference?

    25:35-25:37

For the new mom, what caused the anguish?

    25:38-25:38

    The baby.

    25:39-25:40

    Right?

    25:40-25:41

    And what causes the joy?

    25:42-25:43

    The baby.

    25:44-25:53

So Jesus promises the very thing that caused you anguish, the very thing that caused you sorrow, you will one day be grateful for.

    25:54-25:56

In other words, you've got to see the big picture.

    25:57-25:58

You've got to see the big picture.

    26:00-26:08

This is a principle that has showed up so many times in our lives, and it will show up so many times in your life if you have the eyes of faith to see it.

    26:09-26:10

You know, you lost your job.

    26:11-26:15

You lost your job, the job you loved so much, the job where you felt so much contentment and fulfillment.

    26:16-26:24

You lost your job, you ended up in the Pittsburgh area, you ended up at Harvest Bible Chapel, where you meet the greatest people on earth, and you grow in your walk.

    26:24-26:36

And the very thing that initially caused you anguish ultimately became your greatest blessing to say, "If I never lost my job, I wouldn't be where God has me today." Do you see that?

    26:37-26:39

We talked about this last week.

    26:39-26:48

I'm not going to rehash this extensively, but I talked to you about how COVID brought so much anguish with lockdowns and being unable to see all of our people.

    26:49-26:51

And it brought a lot of sorrow on the front end.

    26:52-26:55

COVID has opened the door to reach more people than ever.

    26:55-27:01

So I'm telling you, I'm thankful for what's happening now because this church is reaching people worldwide right now.

    27:01-27:02

    I'm thankful for that.

    27:03-27:06

Do you see how the thing that brought sorrow ultimately brought joy?

    27:07-27:17

I think at our old church, we had this family that were members of our church, but they had some family members that lost everything in a house fire, lost everything.

    27:18-27:26

And through this, they invited them to church, where they came and most of the family got saved as a result of this.

    27:26-27:28

    And I remember just tears.

    27:28-27:37

One day I was sitting, the church was about to start, and I got this handmade card from one of the kids, one of the little kids, he wrote me this card.

    27:39-27:47

And in the card he said, "If it wasn't for our house catching on fire, I never would have met you.

    27:48-28:01

So I guess it wasn't all bad." And I was just like, "He gets it." Like, the very thing that brings you sorrow, God will ultimately use to bring you joy.

    28:02-28:08

And over and over and over, church, Romans 8.28 is fulfilled right before our eyes.

    28:08-28:13

We know that God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

    28:15-28:20

You're going to have joy overcoming you that is far greater than the sorrow has been.

    28:21-28:22

    And Jesus certainly got it.

    28:23-28:27

Jesus got it the way that joy is so often through pain.

    28:29-28:43

Hebrews 12, 2 says, "Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame and the seed at the right hand of the throne of God." It doesn't say Jesus didn't agonize. He certainly did.

    28:43-28:49

But what made Jesus go to the cross? He saw the bigger picture.

    28:50-28:53

Nobody's going to sign up for this for fun.

    28:53-28:58

But Jesus said, "This is the very means by which people will be saved.

    28:58-29:09

This is the very means by which people can have their sins washed away." So church, we can't rejoice in physical circumstances, because they're going to change, right?

    29:10-29:14

That's what so many people do. They hang their joy on the physical things.

    29:14-29:22

"I find so much joy in my marriage, and in my parenting, and in my job, and in my hobby, and in my health." Those things will all change.

    29:23-29:29

You need to find your joy in your spiritual circumstances, because that's never going to change, if you belong to Christ.

    29:30-29:33

The world didn't give you joy, the world can't take your joy.

    29:33-29:36

It's connected to the hope that you have in Jesus.

    29:36-29:40

So the question I have is, "Are you going to trust Jesus with the big picture?

    29:43-29:49

Will you trust Jesus with whatever suffering you're going through now?" Can you say, "Jesus, I believe there's a bigger picture here.

    29:50-30:01

And even if I can't see it now, I'm going to trust you with it." Because I have to remind myself, this church, all the time, that God took the worst thing that ever happened in the history of the universe.

    30:03-30:04

    Like, what's that?

    30:05-30:06

    The crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

    30:07-30:09

That's the worst thing that ever happened. Think about it.

    30:09-30:17

God Himself, the Creator, became one of us, and we spit on Him, and we mocked Him, and we beat Him half to death, and we publicly executed Him.

    30:18-30:20

God showed up and we killed Him.

    30:21-30:24

That's the worst scenario I can imagine, like, at all.

    30:25-30:27

And that's the very thing that God used to purchase salvation.

    30:28-30:52

So church, I have to constantly remind myself, if God can do that, If God can take something so evil and so horrible and so, so bad, and turn it into something glorious and eternal and so, so good, I have no doubt He can do it with the little bit of suffering thing that I'm going through myself.

    30:53-30:55

Why do I lose sight of my joy in Christ?

    30:56-30:59

Number three, because I'm not praying.

    31:00-31:01

    Because I'm not praying.

    31:01-31:03

Look at verses 23 and 24.

    31:03-31:06

Jesus said, "In that day you will ask nothing of Me.

    31:06-31:11

Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you.

    31:12-31:14

Until now, you have to ask nothing in My name.

    31:14-31:30

Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full." Again, He's obviously talking about the coming of the Holy Spirit, because He says, "In that day you will ask nothing of Me." I'm not going to physically be here to ask.

    31:30-31:35

You're going to ask the Father in my name." In other words, Jesus was saying, "You're not going to need to ask me anything.

    31:36-31:40

You're going to have the Holy Spirit, and you can go directly to God in my name." God the Father.

    31:41-31:45

But did you see here in this passage how joy is directly linked to prayer?

    31:45-31:46

    Did you see that?

    31:48-31:55

Jesus said, "Ask Him and receive, and your joy will be full." Joy is directly linked to prayer.

    31:56-32:07

Philippians 4.6, Paul says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication and thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." So when we pray, what happens?

    32:08-32:15

"All of my circumstances change. All of my circumstances are different." No, your circumstances don't change, but you change.

    32:15-32:23

Because the very next verse says, "And the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Do you see that?

    32:23-32:27

Maybe things around you won't change, but everything within you will change.

    32:28-32:30

    That's the power of prayer.

    32:31-32:33

And I have to ask us, church, have we been praying?

    32:35-32:39

I mean, like, sincerely praying, or have we just been saying our prayers?

    32:40-32:45

I mean, when was the last time you got alone with God, as Jesus told us to?

    32:45-33:02

You got alone with God, and you got on your face, and you had God's Word open in front of you, and you just cried out to God, based on the promises of His Word and the invitation through His Son.

    33:02-33:04

When was the last time you got alone?

    33:04-33:09

And nothing else is happening right now, except coming before God and crying out to Him.

    33:09-33:11

When was the last time that you've done that?

    33:12-33:22

And I imagine for a lot of you, you would say, "I haven't done that in a long time." To pray like that, Jeff, I hear what you're saying, but to actually pray like that?

    33:23-33:25

I haven't done that in a long time.

    33:26-33:32

And my response is simply this, "Then don't wonder why you don't have the peace of God.

    33:33-33:50

Don't wonder why you aren't receiving answers to prayer, and don't wonder why you've lost sight of your joy, if you're not praying like that." Jesus said, "Pray in order that your joy may be full." Because joy is not made full in any other way.

    33:51-33:52

    It's just not.

    33:53-33:54

    It comes through prayer.

    33:55-33:55

    All right.

    33:57-33:59

That's the introduction. Here's the sermon.

    34:00-34:01

Have you lost sight of your joy?

    34:03-34:06

Then I would encourage you to just give God some time to do what He's promised to do.

    34:07-34:12

I would encourage you to take a big step back and look at the bigger picture.

    34:14-34:18

And while you wait, what should we be doing while we wait?

    34:19-34:24

We should be praying expectantly in Jesus' name.

    34:25-34:35

And you're going to show the world that no matter what happens, when you know Jesus, you also know His joy.

    34:37-34:37

    Let's pray.

    34:38-34:43

Father in heaven, we confess to you that sometimes, Father, Father, we're no different than the world.

    34:44-34:56

That we can let circumstances and the headaches and stresses of life overwhelm us that people can't tell us apart from the world at all.

    34:57-34:58

Father, we confess that to You.

    34:59-35:07

And we turn once again to this passage in Your Word where Jesus said that no one can take joy from us.

    35:09-35:23

I pray, Father, that we would get back to that place where we see it, where we experience it, where we know that You're in control, and we're holding on through the faith that You give us, through the invitation of prayer that You give us.

    35:23-35:37

Father, we would learn to wait on the Lord and look at the big picture, knowing that if You can take the cross and turn that into the greatest blessing, You can do that with whatever we're facing in our lives.

    35:37-35:45

Father, slow us down, calm us down, bring us to a place of quietness before You and teach us these lessons again.

    35:46-35:48

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 16:16-24

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Tell of a time you personally experienced Jesus turning your sorrow to joy: a circumstance that looked bad at the time but ended up being a blessing.

  3. How exactly is having “full joy” connected to prayer (John 16:23-24)?

  4. How would you respond to someone who says, “Jesus turns suffering in joy?! There is no way I can have joy as a result of this situation I am going through.”?

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Strategy

Introduction:

Jesus' Mission Strategy: Holy Spirit-Filled People Convicting the World By God's Authoritative Word. (John 16:4-15):

  1. Holy Spirit-filled People ... (John 16:7)
  1. ...convicting the World ... (John 16:8-11)

John 7:7 - The world… hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.

    • Sin (John 16:9)
    • Righteousness (John 16:10)
    • Judgment (John 16:11)

Peter's Pentecost sermon (Acts 2) had all 3 elements:

[Sin] Acts 2:23 - this Jesus... you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

[Righteousness] Acts 2:33 - Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit...

[Judgment] Acts 2:34-35 - For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."'

  2. ... by God's authoritative Word . (John 16:12-15)

Open your Bibles to John chapter 16.

    00:06-00:08

John chapter 16, are you there?

    00:08-00:10

You're going to need to be.

    00:11-00:15

You know, a few years ago, this church went through the book of Acts, verse by verse.

    00:16-00:17

And I think that took, what, three years?

    00:18-00:19

We went through the book of Acts.

    00:19-00:22

And do you know what happened in the book of Acts?

    00:22-00:31

In the book of Acts, a few churches turned the world upside down.

    00:34-00:39

And I think if we're going to be honest with ourselves, we have to ask, what in the world happened to the church?

    00:41-00:48

Because in Acts you have a few churches that turned the world upside down, and now there are more churches than ever.

    00:49-01:03

And I just have to ask us, church, let's be honest, it might sting us a little bit, but where's the impact? Where's the impact? Why are churches so weak?

    01:05-02:16

You know, you would think if the church today is like the church in Acts, and there's just so many more of them, I mean we got four churches on every corner, you would think that we'd see more impact but we see less why is that I'm gonna tell you why that is it's because the church has changed the strategy the church has changed the strategy that's why because the early church powered by the Holy Spirit giving the Word of God saw God's results and since then we think we've gotten a little too smart for that that's so archaic nobody's gonna be interested in that so we're going to give God a leg up and we're going to employ some different strategies and we look like idiots when we do that here's some dumb church strategies that have actually been unemployed to bring people into the church to get attention.

    02:18-02:21

Okay, not, "Hey, we are sincerely seeking the Lord.

    02:21-02:25

We are preaching the word of God." No, no, no, no, no. That's not going to get people.

    02:26-02:28

We need a hook. We need a gimmick.

    02:28-02:34

These are actual real things that churches have done to bring people in. Are you ready for this?

    02:34-02:39

There was a Church of Christ in Houston that had the world's largest hotdog.

    02:40-02:50

And they said, "Come to church and take a bite out of the world's largest hot dog." Obviously, that had to have been pre-COVID, right?

    02:51-02:57

I can't imagine in our day and age, it would ever sell for everybody to be taking a bite off of the same hot dog.

    02:59-03:04

Or maybe it's so big you can socially distance your bites. I don't know.

    03:06-03:11

But I think it was around the same time a group of Catholic churches found a way to get people coming in.

    03:11-03:13

    They had theology on tap.

    03:14-03:15

    Free beer and Bible study.

    03:19-03:24

Which I'm sure, the longer Bible study went, the more interesting it got.

    03:28-03:30

    This is a true story.

    03:33-03:34

    Erin and I remember this.

    03:34-03:35

    This was a local one.

    03:35-03:41

We read about in the paper some years ago, but there was a local church that was offering you $10 to come to church.

    03:44-03:45

    That's what they said.

    03:45-04:03

The headline said, "We will pay you $10 to come to church." And then you read the article, and it was like, "Such and such church "is giving everyone that comes to church $10." And you're like, "Well, you know what, pastors, "if it doesn't sound like a bad deal here." What's $10 gonna buy you in Cranberry?

    04:03-04:06

Like half a burrito at Chipotle's or something, right?

    04:09-04:19

And you're like, "Well, in the same spirit, you could offer people a four-wheeler to come to church." And I would say that's a callback that not everybody's going to get.

    04:23-04:24

    Oh, it goes on.

    04:25-05:06

Because I read this week of a pastor who spent three days in a Plexiglas tube on his church, top of the church if the church would meet a certain attendance record and you're like wow suffering for the gospel right hold that thought his plexiglass tube had electricity air conditioning books laptop TV iPhone and a chair and plenty of food that's what he had in that tube suffering for Jesus and the gas something I could kind of get behind I could use a few days in that as well Oh, and probably the most absurd thing that I read, some of you might remember this.

    05:06-05:11

I completely forgot about this, and when I read this I'm like, oh my gosh, I completely forgot that happened.

    05:11-05:12

Some of you are gonna remember this.

    05:13-05:25

Remember many years ago, a pastor and his wife, a pastor and his wife spent 24 hours in bed together on the roof of their church webcasting the whole time.

    05:25-05:26

    How many people remember that?

    05:27-05:28

    Nobody remembers that?

    05:29-05:31

Oh, that was like a big thing.

    05:31-05:35

like, why did they do that?

    05:35-05:39

Well, obviously, they wanted to garner attention, but they just wrote a book about sex.

    05:39-05:46

So they thought, what better way to promote the book on sex than to put a bed on the roof of the church and webcast the whole thing?

    05:47-05:49

And I think they had to cut it short because they got sunburned.

    05:50-05:50

    True story.

    05:51-05:53

I could go on, but I'm not going to.

    05:54-06:28

But do you see, like, I just have to wonder, like have these people read the Bible because Jesus had quite a different strategy for reaching people didn't he and today what I want you to see in this passage that we're looking at Jesus is going to lay out his strategy Jesus says here is how here's how I'm going to reach the world and you have to see this because you're part of this right we've been going through John chapters you 13, 14, 15, now we're in 16.

    06:29-06:31

And there's a theme here in these chapters.

    06:32-06:33

    Jesus says, "Hey, I'm leaving.

    06:35-06:57

And when I go, you're going to have all of the resources of heaven because after I leave, the Holy Spirit is going to come and indwell God's people." And Jesus said, "By the way, you need to make sure that you love one another the way I loved you." And that's super important because He says, "The world's going to hate you." was the sermon last week, and this flows straight from that.

    06:58-07:01

Jesus said, "The world's gonna hate you "because the world hated me." Right?

    07:02-07:06

And at this point, the disciples were like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, what's all the hate talk, Jesus?

    07:06-07:08

"Let's just, can we just talk about love again?

    07:08-07:13

"What's with all the hate talk?" Jesus wasn't sugarcoating anything.

    07:14-07:16

Jesus said, "Listen, they hated me, they're gonna hate you.

    07:16-07:27

"And when I go back to heaven, "they're not gonna be able to get me." Right, because let's be honest, if the world could, The world would nail Jesus to the cross again, but they can't touch him.

    07:30-07:35

So Satan and the world are going to go after you.

    07:39-07:44

But last week through this Jesus promised spirit powered witness, right?

    07:45-07:54

And the disciples had to have been thinking, wait, wait, you want us to take the mission to a bunch of people that hate us, how are we gonna pull that off?

    07:54-07:57

And here's where we get to the strategy, all right?

    07:58-08:01

Look at verse four, where we left off, actually like the middle of verse four.

    08:02-08:06

Jesus said, "I did not say these things to you "from the beginning because I was with you.

    08:06-08:10

"But now I am going to him who sent me.

    08:10-08:15

"And none of you asks me, where are you going?" Stop there.

    08:16-08:18

You know, when I read this, I'm like, whoa, hang on a second.

    08:19-08:25

Jesus said, "None of you ask me where you're going." Actually, Peter asked him that exact question in chapter 13, verse 36.

    08:26-08:27

    So what's going on here?

    08:27-08:30

Well, yeah, Peter asked the question.

    08:30-08:32

Those were the words that came out of his mouth.

    08:33-08:36

But understand that Peter wasn't really asking about Jesus.

    08:37-08:42

Peter's question was 100% motivated by concern for Peter.

    08:42-08:45

He was concerned about himself, right?

    08:46-08:51

He wasn't like, none of the disciples were like, Jesus, you know, tell us, you know, where are you going to win?

    08:51-08:53

And how's it going to, what's it going to look like?

    08:53-08:54

And can you explain that to me?

    08:54-08:57

None of them even really cared about that.

    08:58-09:00

They were thinking, what's going to happen to us?

    09:00-09:01

Well, hang on, what about us?

    09:03-09:04

What are we going to do when you're gone?

    09:06-09:07

What are we going to do without Jesus?

    09:08-09:17

Well, verse six, Jesus says, "But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts." See there, Jesus is driving at home.

    09:17-09:27

and he says, "You're not really thinking about where I'm going, and what I'm doing, and what's happening with me, because you're so self-consumed with your own sorrow that you can't see past that.

    09:31-09:50

And you're so self-consumed with your own sorrow, you're missing the big picture of what I want to do." Jesus is like, "This is part of this huge plan that is laid out for the salvation of the world and you're so consumed with, oh no, what am I gonna do without you?

    09:50-09:53

You hear Jesus, you're missing the picture, people.

    09:56-10:01

Jesus is saying, look, I'm not a victim of circumstance and it's gonna look like that.

    10:01-10:10

They're gonna, you know, there's gonna be betrayal, spoiler alert, and arrest and trial and crucifixion and it's gonna look like everything's out of control.

    10:10-10:14

And Jesus is like, no, no, no, no, no, This is why I came. This is part of the plan.

    10:15-10:16

And then I'm gonna raise from the dead.

    10:16-10:17

    Oops, spoiler alert again.

    10:17-10:18

I'm gonna raise from the dead.

    10:21-10:30

And Jesus in this passage we're looking at here today, he's saying, okay, when I'm done with my part of the mission, then you are going to do your part of the mission.

    10:30-10:39

We have a strategy in place for the disciples and the church to carry out the next phase of the mission, which is global witness.

    10:40-10:45

The next stage of the mission is telling the world about Jesus Christ, who he is, what he's done.

    10:48-10:48

    All right?

    10:50-10:51

    So here's the sermon today.

    10:54-10:59

Now I have been admonished on Family Sunday to keep the messages shorter.

    11:01-11:07

And look, I'm concerned with the needs of the people, so I'm going to give you the sermon in one sentence and you can go.

    11:08-11:08

    You ready?

    11:09-11:11

    Jesus' mission strategy.

    11:13-11:14

Jesus said, "Here's the strategy here.

    11:14-11:15

    "Here's what you can't miss.

    11:15-11:25

"Here's the strategy." One sentence, "Holy Spirit-filled people "convicting the world by God's authoritative word." Jesus said, "That's my strategy for reaching the world." Here it is.

    11:26-11:40

"Holy Spirit-filled people "convicting the world by God's authoritative word." That's it, you are loved, you can go.

    11:42-11:50

If you wanna stick around, and it's entirely up to you, but if you wanna stick around, I'm gonna unpack that sentence for you a little bit so we understand.

    11:51-11:54

Actually, Jesus is gonna unpack it, I'm just gonna basically share what he said.

    11:55-11:58

But this is Jesus' mission strategy, you wanna get that down.

    11:59-12:15

The Jesus' mission strategy, Jesus said, "Okay, you're so short-sighted, "you're so sorrowful, let me tell you the big picture." He mentioned briefly last week that the Holy Spirit was going to bear witness and God's people were involved in that somehow.

    12:16-12:19

And here in this passage, he's explaining what that looks like.

    12:19-12:21

So let's talk about Jesus' mission strategy.

    12:21-12:24

Number one, Holy Spirit filled people.

    12:24-12:27

Let's talk about that part of the sentence because that's verse seven.

    12:28-12:29

    Jesus, here's the plan.

    12:29-12:29

    You ready?

    12:30-12:30

    Here's the big picture.

    12:31-12:31

    Here's the plan.

    12:33-12:35

Jesus said, "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth.

    12:36-12:42

It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.

    12:44-12:56

But if I go, I will send Him to you." And see, Jesus' plan is this. Everything in Jesus' plan starts with transformed people.

    12:57-12:57

    That's the plan.

    12:58-13:37

He said this earlier in John chapter 15, verse 5, "Vine and the branches," Jesus said, "apart from Me, you can do right so get it out of your head that you're gonna go do something for Jesus you're not Jesus is going to do something through you so long as the Holy Spirit is alive and at work in you apart from him you can do nothing it's Jesus power given to us by the Holy Spirit and this isn't exactly a new concept but over and over and over and over Jesus has been saying I'm leaving and I'm sending someone else to take my place right he said in chapter 14 verse 16 chapter 14 verse 26 chapter 15 verse 26 over and over Jesus said I'm leaving with the Holy Spirit's coming.

    13:38-13:42

And now Jesus again with the call back to say, "Look, this is how the plan works.

    13:43-13:57

The Holy Spirit transforms people." But then He says something that I know had to have completely just blew the disciples away.

    13:58-14:05

When He made this statement, He says, "I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away." Like what? What?

    14:07-14:09

I mean, think about this from the disciples perspective.

    14:10-14:12

They left everything to follow Jesus, right?

    14:12-14:19

They left their businesses, they left their families, they left everything that they ever knew behind to follow Jesus.

    14:19-14:20

And Jesus is like, "I'm leaving, but you know what?

    14:20-14:24

You should be happy. This is good for you." Like, what are you talking about?

    14:24-14:28

I left everything to follow you, and now you're leaving?

    14:28-14:29

And Jesus said, "No, it's good.

    14:31-14:40

It's good." Did you ever wonder, did you ever wonder if God knew what he was doing?

    14:43-14:44

    Did you ever wonder that?

    14:45-14:50

Something's happening in your life that doesn't quite match up with the way you think things should be happening in your life.

    14:51-14:53

And have you ever at that moment wondered, does God know what he's doing?

    14:54-14:55

    Have you ever wondered that?

    14:57-14:58

It just got real uncomfortable here.

    15:00-15:08

Like, "Yes, I totally have, but I don't want to say that in church." All right, I'm going to help you out here.

    15:09-15:10

    I've wondered that.

    15:13-15:21

In my weakness, in my fleshly moments, I have wondered, "Does God know what he's doing?" Because this isn't how I'd write the script.

    15:23-15:24

Maybe you can relate to that.

    15:26-15:38

Like for example, the pandemic stuff, like when that hit, I remember in my quiet times thinking what in the world is this going to do for the gospel?

    15:40-15:52

If now people are shut in their homes and people are told to stay away from each other, and this is going to squash evangelism.

    15:53-15:58

That's what I thought, and I know it sounds stupid now, but that's what I thought.

    15:59-16:05

What is this going to do for the mission if everybody's locked in their homes and we can't be near people?

    16:06-16:13

And, like, God must not have seen this coming because this just put the brakes on world missions.

    16:15-16:16

    And then did it really?

    16:16-16:17

    Did it?

    16:18-16:19

Because do you know what happened?

    16:22-16:43

of people joining us at home and on streaming and all of that, our church invested some cameras and people way smarter than me that work in the AV ministry were involved with, you know, getting streaming set up, an online church, an online small group, and you know, we're gonna set all this stuff up. And do you know what happened as a result of that?

    16:45-17:09

Our reach has grown exponentially. That we are literally being broadcast all over the world Because I get messages from people in Uganda and in Ghana and in Japan and all over the United States. I get messages all the time, "Hey you don't know me Pastor Jeff but I'm so-and-so and I live in Uganda and we listen to you every week." Like what?

    17:10-17:29

What? I'm like, I thought that this stuff was gonna like squelch the gospel. It has opened doors for us that we never had before. And church, if If that's happening in this church, think about all the other churches that are doing the same things that we are and the people that they're reaching.

    17:30-17:33

So did this pandemic really put a halt on evangelism?

    17:34-17:36

We saw that in Thailand as well.

    17:36-17:39

We teach in Thailand every month through video call.

    17:40-17:50

And because of quarantining and lockdowns and things closing over there, not everybody has been able to come to the meeting, the monthly meeting where we teach.

    17:51-17:54

I'm like, oh man, you know, our attendance has been reduced in a monthly meeting.

    17:54-17:57

We're not reaching as many people in Thailand as we used to.

    17:57-18:00

And do you know what our missionary Barnabas did last week?

    18:00-18:02

He set up a group video call.

    18:03-18:07

So we were in 13 villages in Northern Thailand last week instead of just one.

    18:08-18:10

You're like, why are you telling us this?

    18:12-18:25

I'm telling you that there's times that I've thought, I don't know if God knows what he's doing or what's going on, and God has blown me away with, you're so short-sighted, because this is what I'm going to use to increase the reach.

    18:25-18:28

And you're like, okay, but what does this have to do?

    18:28-18:30

Oh, oh, oh, some of you are catching it now.

    18:32-18:34

What does this have to do with Jesus and the disciples?

    18:34-18:36

Jesus says, it's to your advantage that I go away.

    18:36-18:39

Wow, how is it to our advantage?

    18:40-18:44

Because Jesus had some self-imposed limitations because of the incarnation.

    18:46-18:50

And one of the limitations that Jesus had was he was localized.

    18:51-18:55

Jesus wasn't everywhere at the same time while he was on the earth.

    18:55-18:57

And do you see where this strategy is going?

    18:58-19:04

With Jesus' strategy that he's going to put in place after he leaves God's Holy Spirit and dwelling every person.

    19:04-19:05

Do you know what that means?

    19:05-19:06

    It means two things.

    19:07-19:11

It means now Jesus would be everywhere that his people are.

    19:12-19:13

    Isn't that awesome?

    19:13-19:14

    But it means something else.

    19:14-19:21

It also means that his people would have Jesus everywhere they are.

    19:22-19:23

    You see the strategy?

    19:25-19:28

It's a brilliant strategy to change the world.

    19:28-19:34

Jesus said, "I love all people of all tribes "of all nations everywhere, and I wanna reach them all." And here's how we're gonna do it.

    19:34-19:39

Step one, I'm gonna leave, and my spirit is gonna be in all my people, and we're gonna spread out.

    19:41-19:44

So that's part one of Jesus' strategy, Holy Spirit filled people. You got that?

    19:45-19:46

    Okay, here's part two.

    19:47-19:48

    They're gonna convict the world.

    19:50-19:51

Convict the world, look at verse eight.

    19:52-20:01

Jesus said, "And when he comes, the Holy Spirit." And when he comes, he will convict the world regarding sin and righteousness and judgment.

    20:03-20:03

    Stop there.

    20:06-20:12

The Holy Spirit will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

    20:13-20:21

And many people think that what this means is the Holy Spirit is going to be at work in the hearts of unbelievers.

    20:24-20:25

    And that's a true statement.

    20:25-20:30

The Holy Spirit does work in the hearts of unbelievers, but that is not what Jesus is saying here.

    20:33-20:40

We know this because back in chapter 14, verse 17, Jesus said the world can't receive the Holy Spirit.

    20:40-20:42

They don't see him, they don't know him.

    20:45-20:54

But some people think that the Holy Spirit convicting people, I guess in a lot of people's minds, they haven't built that bridge as to how that happens.

    20:54-21:06

It's just like an unbeliever is walking down the street one day and all of a sudden the Holy Spirit zaps them and they're like, "Holy smokes, I am a sinner who violated the standard of a holy God.

    21:07-21:09

I better find somebody that can explain that to me.

    21:10-21:12

And that's not what he's saying.

    21:14-21:16

    Like, what is he saying?

    21:18-21:21

Well, actually the word convict here, he will convict the world.

    21:21-21:23

The word convict is a legal term.

    21:25-21:29

It means to pronounce the verdict, indict by evidence.

    21:30-21:34

The word convict literally means to prosecute.

    21:36-21:38

That because of the evidence you stand guilty.

    21:40-21:42

That's what it means to convict.

    21:42-21:47

You see the Holy Spirit doesn't just accuse, like you shouldn't do that, that's wrong.

    21:48-21:49

The Holy Spirit renders the verdict.

    21:49-21:54

The Holy Spirit brings guilt so people realize their helplessness.

    21:55-21:57

Like, well, how does the Holy Spirit do that?

    21:58-22:00

Holy Spirit does it through the preaching of the Word of God.

    22:02-22:05

Preaching the Bible is prosecuting the world.

    22:07-22:09

We talked about this last week.

    22:09-22:16

Jesus said in John 7, verse 7, that the world hates me because I testify about it, that its works are evil.

    22:17-22:26

And with Jesus gone, the world's going to hate us because we're echoing the same message every time we share the Word of God.

    22:27-22:30

You're like, "Well, share what exactly?" Well, he tells us three things.

    22:31-22:32

Do you see that in verse eight?

    22:33-22:39

He'll convict the world concerning three things, sin and righteousness and judgment.

    22:40-22:44

Those are the three words of the day because this is it.

    22:44-22:57

Every key element of the gospel, everything that Jesus is, everything that Jesus stands for, everything that Jesus accomplished, everything that Jesus will accomplish, all of it can be boiled down to these three words.

    23:01-23:03

    Sin, righteousness, and judgment.

    23:05-23:06

    That's the gospel.

    23:07-23:10

You're like, "Man, you've got to explain that." Well, actually, Jesus did.

    23:10-23:11

    Look at verse 9.

    23:11-23:14

Verse 9, Jesus says, He breaks it down.

    23:14-23:16

Jesus gives like a mini-sermon here.

    23:16-23:23

He says, "Concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me." Let's talk about sin for a second.

    23:24-23:31

Jesus didn't say sins, plural, He said concerning sin, singular.

    23:32-23:33

    What's sin?

    23:33-23:35

He tells us. What's the sin?

    23:36-23:37

You tell me, what's the sin?

    23:38-23:44

Not believing in Him, right? That's the sin. Here's the thing, we've all sinned, right?

    23:44-23:48

We've all rebelled against God in some way, and the penalty is death.

    23:48-23:53

The penalty for sinning against God is eternal separation from God.

    23:55-23:57

    And we've all sinned.

    24:00-24:02

Different ways, but we've all sinned.

    24:04-24:06

And you know, any sin can be forgiven.

    24:07-24:16

Any sin, no matter what you've done, and somebody here needs to hear this, no matter what you've done, things that people know about, things that maybe nobody knows about.

    24:17-24:18

    Any sin can be forgiven.

    24:19-24:19

    Whatever you've done.

    24:20-24:21

If you feel like, "Man, you don't understand Jeff.

    24:22-24:25

You know, with my age, I'm awfully late to the game.

    24:25-24:30

I've lived a whole life of rebelling against God, ignoring God." That can be forgiven.

    24:31-24:35

"But Jeff, I've had such hatred in my heart for so long." That can be forgiven.

    24:36-24:39

"You know, Jeff, I've had a terrible problem with lying or gossip." That can be forgiven.

    24:40-24:46

"You know, Jeff, I've struggled with lust my whole life." And that can be forgiven.

    24:47-24:49

There's only one sin that cannot be forgiven.

    24:51-24:54

That's refusing to believe in the one who takes away your sin.

    24:55-24:57

That is the sin that can't be forgiven.

    25:00-25:03

To not receive the gift of eternal life that Jesus purchased.

    25:06-25:09

And if you refuse Jesus Christ, you're eternally condemned.

    25:10-25:14

Because there is no plan B. Right?

    25:15-25:24

If you went to the doctor and the doctor says, "Yeah, you have this extremely rare terminal disease and you're going to die if untreated, but I got good news.

    25:25-25:28

We have this medication that has a special ingredient in it.

    25:28-25:39

And if you take one of these pills every day for two weeks, there's a chemical that will kill the disease in you and you'll be completely healed." What would you do?

    25:41-25:53

You'd say, "Oh, stop pushing your beliefs on me about pharmaceuticals and I don't know who you think you are." And you'd be stupid to say that.

    25:53-25:55

Like, "Give me those, give me that medication.

    25:55-26:03

I need to, I need to take this." Because you see, if you said to the doctor, "I don't, I don't want your stupid medicine." What do you want the doctor to do?

    26:04-26:05

What do you want him to do?

    26:05-26:16

He goes, "I gave you the cure." You're like, "I don't want the cure." He's going to say, "Well, enjoy your last two weeks, because there's nothing else I can do for you.

    26:16-26:26

I've given you the cure, and you don't want the cure that I've given you, so why in the world do you think that there's some other option?" But you see, that's exactly what people do with God.

    26:27-26:29

God says, "I've sent my Son to die.

    26:29-26:39

He took all of your sin on Himself and bore my wrath so that you don't have to, and He as a free gift and you can have eternal life through believing in his name.

    26:39-26:41

And people are like, I don't want Jesus.

    26:43-26:46

And those same people think they're still going to heaven.

    26:49-26:53

Like God's up in heaven going, oh, you don't want my son that I killed for you?

    26:53-26:58

Oh, let me see if I can find a means of salvation that's more suitable for your needs.

    26:59-27:02

You're obnoxious if you think that.

    27:03-27:04

    You're obnoxious.

    27:08-27:11

That's the sin Jesus is talking about here.

    27:12-27:16

And the Holy Spirit's going to come and say, "Hey, God sent His Son to die for you.

    27:18-27:21

And you need to believe in Him, because there's no plan B.

    27:21-27:30

And you've got to start here. You can't preach the good news without preaching the bad news first." Again, church is changing the strategy.

    27:31-28:01

want people to we want people to feel good at first church of so-and-so we want you to be comfortable in our church listen I don't care if you're comfortable at all because you can have the nicest recliner best air conditioning best lighting and the best coffee and be heading straight to hell at the end of the day I really don't care if you're comfortable what I care as do you know Jesus Christ?

    28:02-28:04

    Because He's all that matters.

    28:06-28:08

The world is convicted concerning sin.

    28:08-28:11

Secondly, the world is convicted concerning righteousness.

    28:12-28:23

Verse 10, Jesus says, "Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer." You see, God's standard is you must be perfectly holy to get to heaven.

    28:24-28:25

    That's God's standard.

    28:25-28:28

That's what we mean by righteousness, by the way.

    28:28-28:56

Righteousness means perfectly right and if you're like I hear what you're saying about Jesus, but I'm good enough to go to heaven Okay. Well, here's the criteria. Are you a hundred percent? Perfect? You've never made a mistake ever thought attitude deed action You've never made a mistake if that's you great I'll see you in heaven, but I needed God's plan to get there because I'm so far from perfect You need to be perfectly holy to get to heaven. So why did Jesus say I go to the father you see me no longer?

    28:57-29:05

Because you see, understand this, Jesus ultimately was vindicated for his righteousness by being at the right hand of God.

    29:06-29:17

That was Jesus' vindication. In other words, there's only ever been one person that walked on this earth that was considered good enough by his own merit to go to heaven, and that's Jesus himself.

    29:18-29:19

    He was vindicated.

    29:21-29:26

But take a poll of all the unsaved people that you know.

    29:26-29:32

Find some people you know that don't know the Lord and take a poll, and they're all going to tell you something like this.

    29:32-29:35

They're going to say, "Well, I'm good enough to go to heaven.

    29:36-29:36

    I'm good enough.

    29:37-29:41

I mean, I'm not perfect, but surely God will overlook my faults.

    29:42-29:54

None of us are good enough to go." Some people say this, "Well, you know, Jeff, I just hope that the good outweighs the bad." It doesn't.

    29:56-29:57

    And it won't.

    29:59-30:03

You have to be 100% holy to enter God's presence yourself.

    30:03-30:06

And none of us can attain that on our own.

    30:08-30:13

You see the righteousness that saves you belongs to Jesus.

    30:14-30:25

And when you receive Him, God pronounces you perfectly righteous, because Jesus imputes his righteousness onto you.

    30:26-30:32

Understand that's why you need Jesus, because you need his righteousness to be in God's presence.

    30:33-30:37

You don't have it, you can't earn it, but he will give it to you upon belief.

    30:37-30:41

It's a gift that comes upon belief. He imputes it.

    30:42-30:45

What do you mean imputes? What does that even mean?

    30:46-30:48

It would be like if you, let's say you needed $5,000.

    30:48-30:54

You had to pay some bill and you're like, "I need $5,000," and I don't have $5,000.

    30:56-31:07

And I say to you, "All right, let's go to the bank together." And I go to your bank with you and I write a check for $5,000 and I put it on your bank account.

    31:08-31:11

So now your account says that you have $5,000.

    31:13-31:13

    Did you put it there?

    31:15-31:16

    Did you put it there?

    31:16-31:16

    No.

    31:17-31:20

put it there on your behalf, but it says you have it.

    31:21-31:24

That's exactly what Jesus Christ has done with his holiness and his righteousness.

    31:25-31:32

He says, when you believe in me, I'll put my holiness on your account so that when God sees you, he sees you as perfect as Jesus.

    31:33-31:34

    He sees you perfectly holy.

    31:35-31:40

It has to come from Jesus, and that's why Jesus said the world is convicted concerning righteousness.

    31:40-31:43

And then verse 11, concerning judgment.

    31:44-31:48

Concerning judgment, he says, concerning judgment because the ruler of this world is judged.

    31:49-31:51

Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

    31:51-31:52

You don't wanna believe in Jesus.

    31:52-31:54

You don't wanna receive his forgiveness.

    31:54-31:55

You don't wanna receive his righteousness.

    31:57-32:07

The only thing you have to look forward to, if that's you, the only thing you have to look forward to is judgment and the lake of fire, according to God's word.

    32:10-32:15

Refusing Jesus means the only option you have for your future is God's judgment.

    32:16-32:17

    You can't escape that.

    32:19-32:19

    It's a done deal.

    32:20-32:21

    Sentence has been passed.

    32:22-32:25

Judgment has already been established and fixed.

    32:25-32:27

And God's not going to change His mind.

    32:28-32:35

You're like, "Well, how can we be sure about that?" Because Jesus said the ruler of this world, Satan, is already judged.

    32:35-32:43

In other words, if the most powerful anti-God force of evil in the world already stands condemned, what option do you think you have?

    32:43-32:45

What hope do you think you have?

    32:47-32:49

What chance do you have to escape?

    32:50-32:52

The world is convicted concerning judgment.

    32:53-32:56

So Jesus said this is the content of the gospel message.

    32:57-33:01

The Holy Spirit convicting the world of sin and righteousness and judgment.

    33:02-33:06

By the way, we saw this illustrated in Peter's Sermon at Pentecost.

    33:07-33:08

Like does this thing really work?

    33:09-33:11

This kind of preaching, does it really work?

    33:12-33:18

Remember Pentecost, Peter preached on sin, verse 23, this Jesus you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

    33:18-33:20

    Then Peter preached about righteousness.

    33:21-33:26

Jesus vindicated at the right hand of God, verse 33, being therefore exalted at the right hand of God.

    33:27-33:32

Peter preached about judgment, God's enemy judged, sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.

    33:33-33:35

Does that kind of preaching really work?

    33:35-33:37

What, Pentecost, 3000 people got saved.

    33:39-33:40

    Yeah, it works, it works.

    33:42-33:44

So this is part two of Jesus' strategy.

    33:46-33:48

    Holy Spirit convicting the world.

    33:50-33:56

And some people respond by confessing their guilt and desperately crying out for the forgiveness and salvation that Jesus wants to give.

    33:58-34:01

    Third part, God's authoritative word.

    34:04-34:05

    By God's authoritative word.

    34:06-34:11

Okay, the strategy is, Holy Spirit filled people convicting the world like God's authoritative word.

    34:14-34:18

All of this stuff that we're talking about obviously comes from the word of God.

    34:18-34:25

And what we're going to see here as we close is Jesus promising the inspiration of the New Testament.

    34:26-34:28

Yes, the New Testament, look at verse 12.

    34:29-34:48

Jesus said, "I still have many things to say to you, "but you cannot bear them now." Jesus said, "I got so much more I gotta tell you." He says, "But you can't handle it." "Well, why not?" He says, "You're just so full of sorrow.

    34:49-34:52

Like you can't get out of your own heads right now.

    34:52-35:01

And I got all this other stuff I wanna tell you, but you can't hear it now." "Okay, Jesus, well, when are you gonna tell us the rest?" Well, look at verse 13.

    35:01-35:14

He says, "When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

    35:17-35:28

When the Holy Spirit comes, that's Acts chapter two, that's Pentecost, the Holy Spirit is going to guide them in truth, he says, and the New Testament, rather, is going to be written through them.

    35:30-35:32

That's what Jesus is talking about here.

    35:33-35:34

Like there's more to tell you, you can't hear it.

    35:35-35:42

Holy Spirit's gonna come and He's going to inspire the New Testament to be written and then you're gonna have everything that I want you to know.

    35:43-35:45

    I just, I can't tell you now.

    35:46-35:48

Just, you're so full of sorrow.

    35:51-35:55

Jesus so often quoted the Old Testament affirming the authority here.

    35:55-35:57

He's affirming the authority of the New Testament.

    35:59-36:00

Like, well, what's the New Testament about?

    36:00-36:01

    Last two verses.

    36:02-36:02

    Last two verses.

    36:04-36:07

Like man, this was long and I'm like, man, I gave you a chance to leave.

    36:09-36:19

Verse 14, "He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you." All that the Father has is mine.

    36:20-36:24

Therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

    36:26-36:27

    He will glorify the Son.

    36:28-36:30

And that's everything in the New Testament, right?

    36:30-36:32

You realize the New Testament, like, it's all about Jesus.

    36:32-36:37

The Gospels are basically the biography of Jesus.

    36:37-36:43

And Acts, Acts talks about what Jesus does through the Holy Spirit in building the church that he promised.

    36:43-36:51

And the epistles are the explanation of the implications of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

    36:52-36:55

And Revelation is about the return of who?

    36:56-36:58

Jesus, yeah, it's all about Jesus.

    36:58-36:59

And that's what Jesus is saying here.

    36:59-37:02

The Holy Spirit's going to glorify me.

    37:02-37:05

with the stuff that he's going to tell you.

    37:06-37:07

    It's all about Jesus.

    37:08-37:20

His glory revealed as His Holy Spirit indwells His people and convicts the world through the preaching of His inspired Word.

    37:21-37:22

    That's Jesus' strategy.

    37:25-37:27

You're like, "Well, it seems a little archaic.

    37:28-37:31

He doesn't even have a fog machine in his strategy.

    37:35-37:42

And I would just say this, wherever this strategy has been implemented, it's worked.

    37:46-37:54

As the worship team comes forward and we close, I just want to ask you, what's your strategy for getting to heaven.

    37:59-38:22

Because everybody that I talk to is planning on being there. Yeah, once in a while I meet some knucklehead that's like, "Well, I'm going to hell and I don't care because all of my buddies are there." And they think they sound cool when they say it, but they have no idea how horrific the implications are of that statement. But most people deep down really feel like they're going to heaven, that there's some loophole, last minute escape clause, whatever, whatever.

    38:25-38:28

And for a lot of people, it's banking on being a good person.

    38:28-38:29

I'm good enough, I'm good enough.

    38:31-38:33

I try to do the right thing, and the good outweighs the bad.

    38:33-38:37

Surely, surely God won't let a good person like me into heaven.

    38:40-38:48

If that's you, I want you to look at God's word here today and see that Jesus said that's not how it works.

    38:52-39:00

Today, you can forsake your plan for getting to heaven that won't get you there.

    39:02-39:08

And you can embrace Jesus' plan that He promised would get you there.

    39:10-39:11

    Because He is the plan.

    39:15-39:19

Today you need to believe that Jesus Christ died for you.

    39:21-39:28

You need to believe that Jesus Christ rose from the dead to give you the promise of eternal life.

    39:30-39:31

    You need to believe that.

    39:33-39:43

You need to receive His righteousness to say, "I know I'm not good enough, but You've promised to make me good enough by giving me your righteousness.

    39:47-39:49

And in doing so, you'll escape God's judgment.

    39:50-39:52

    Sin, righteousness, judgment.

    39:53-39:54

    Let's pray.

    39:56-40:00

Father in heaven, I know there are people sitting in this room.

    40:01-40:05

There are people that are watching this stream or will be watching this recording.

    40:08-40:10

    And they don't know you.

    40:11-40:21

Maybe they're here because they like the people here, or they like the music here, or they like the kids program here, or maybe we're just entertaining or something.

    40:22-40:26

But deep down, they're still trusting their goodness to get them to heaven.

    40:29-40:34

They still think somehow they can live life on their terms and enter heaven by their terms.

    40:34-40:36

When you've told us it doesn't work that way.

    40:36-40:41

We were created by you for your glory, and we have been redeemed by you for your glory.

    40:42-40:50

And you have called us to abandon our lives and receive the life of Jesus Christ.

    40:55-41:05

So Father, I pray that if there's anyone here who doesn't know you, I pray that you not give them a moment's rest.

    41:06-41:08

I pray that they're not able to eat their lunch.

    41:09-41:11

I pray that they're not able to go to sleep.

    41:12-41:19

I pray that they are distracted by this truth until they get on their faces and cry out to You.

    41:23-41:25

Father, we just talked about Your strategy.

    41:27-41:29

Father, we're not employing any gimmicks here.

    41:30-41:31

    I trust Your Word.

    41:33-41:34

I trust the power of Your Spirit.

    41:34-41:47

And God, I'm asking for your glory, that you would use your Word and your Spirit to draw the lost to you, so that your name would be praised.

    41:48-41:50

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
