Now, all in favor of being real?

    00:03-00:03

    All in favor?

    00:04-00:06

Is there anybody here at all that's like, "You know what?

    00:07-00:09

"I just wanna be a big phony.

    00:10-00:11

    "That's really what I'm after.

    00:11-00:12

    "You know what?

    00:13-00:17

"That's how I want people to remember me." Like, you remember that guy?

    00:17-00:21

He was a big phony, and he was really good at pretending to be something that he wasn't.

    00:21-00:22

    Anybody?

    00:23-00:28

If that's your passion, you're not gonna be very comfortable here this morning.

    00:29-00:31

    because I wanna be real.

    00:32-00:33

    I wanna be real.

    00:34-00:35

    I wanna be transparent.

    00:36-00:37

    I wanna be authentic.

    00:39-00:40

    I wanna be real.

    00:40-00:42

And we saw last week what that meant.

    00:44-00:45

What does it look like when we're real?

    00:46-00:52

And we saw that the apostle Paul told us to work out our salvation.

    00:55-01:15

And then he says, "For it's God who works in you." And that's where reality, that's where being authentic, that's where being the real deal, that's where it has to start, at that level of being who God's called you to be and being who God's equipped you to be.

    01:16-01:17

    I wanna be real.

    01:20-01:32

And after last week, you can walk away from that message and you can be like, well, yeah, I kind of hear what you're saying and I've wrestled with this as I have.

    01:33-01:35

So I know what you were asking.

    01:35-01:39

You're asking yourself, what does it look like when someone's real?

    01:40-01:42

What does it look like when somebody's the real deal?

    01:43-01:47

That's why the title of this message is, these guys are for real.

    01:48-01:50

All right, these guys are for real.

    01:51-02:17

you're gonna be driving home from church today, and whether you're with your girlfriend or with your spouse, some of you are gonna be doing it with your children, you're gonna be driving home from church today, and you're gonna turn to the person next to you, and you're gonna say, "Those guys were for real." Or if you came to church by yourself, you're gonna be getting on the phone on your way home and saying, "These guys are for real." All right?

    02:18-02:19

    These guys are for real.

    02:20-02:30

In preparing this message, we're going to be reading the text here in a second, but we're gonna see the Apostle Paul was talking about a couple of real guys.

    02:30-02:34

And I got to thinking, how many people remember Chuck Norris jokes?

    02:34-02:36

How many people remember Chuck Norris jokes?

    02:36-02:37

    A few of you?

    02:38-02:38

    Okay.

    02:39-02:42

How many people have never heard of a Chuck Norris joke?

    02:43-02:44

Oh, okay, there's a few of you.

    02:45-02:46

    Well, gosh.

    02:47-03:15

Chuck Norris jokes were really popular or four years ago, and during that time I was like leading a youth discipleship program, so I was really hip to the Chuck Norris jokes. But basically these jokes are obvious exaggerated statements of Chuck Norris's manliness because he's often portrayed in movies and his TV show. What's his TV show? Oh you got it!

    03:15-03:23

I knew what it was. I was just saying, "Walker, Texas Rage!" I mean, I think that's what it was, I mean, I might've passed it on the dial.

    03:25-03:27

    Okay, truth is out.

    03:31-03:42

But I looked up online, and you might be like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, "those are so like four years ago." Yeah, maybe.

    03:42-03:46

But I gotta admit, like I said, I'm going for transparency, right?

    03:46-03:51

I gotta admit, I laughed out loud at a couple of these, because in the last four years, A couple of new ones have sprung up.

    03:53-03:57

    Fear of spiders is arachnophobia.

    03:58-04:02

Fear of tight spaces is claustrophobia.

    04:03-04:06

Fear of Chuck Norris is logic.

    04:10-04:13

Did you know Chuck Norris has a grizzly bear carpet in his living room?

    04:14-04:15

    It isn't dead.

    04:15-04:16

    It's just afraid to move.

    04:19-04:20

    They're still funny.

    04:22-04:25

Let's seriously, you don't have to tell anybody that we talked about this.

    04:26-04:28

Like, you know, I laughed though.

    04:28-04:32

Did you know that ghosts sit around a fire and tell Chuck Norris stories?

    04:34-04:39

Did you know that death once had a near Chuck Norris experience?

    04:42-04:44

This last one just tickled me.

    04:46-05:06

Did you know that one time Chuck Norris and Superman had a fight and they had a little wager going into the fight and they said, "Whoever loses from now on has to wear their underpants "on the outside of their clothes." All right, enough of that.

    05:06-05:10

Well, in this section, why are we talking about Chuck Norris?

    05:10-05:14

We're going to read about the apostle Paul's versions of Chuck Norris, okay?

    05:15-05:16

Paul didn't tell Chuck Norris jokes.

    05:17-05:18

    Paul told Timothy jokes.

    05:19-05:22

    Paul told Epaphroditus jokes.

    05:23-05:23

    Okay?

    05:24-05:30

So let's look at Philippians chapter two, picking up in verse 19.

    05:32-05:41

Paul says, "I hope in the Lord Jesus "to send Timothy to you soon, "so that I too may be cheered by news of you.

    05:44-05:49

For I have no one like him, who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.

    05:51-05:55

For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

    05:55-06:03

But you know Timothy's proven worth, how as a son with a father, he has served with me in the gospel.

    06:04-06:08

I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me.

    06:09-06:14

And I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also.

    06:18-06:30

I've thought it necessary to send you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier and your messenger and minister to my need.

    06:32-06:38

For he has been longing for you all and has been distressed because you heard that he was ill.

    06:39-06:43

Indeed, he was ill near to death, but God had mercy on him.

    06:43-06:48

And not only on him, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

    06:50-06:52

I am the more eager to send him.

    06:53-07:00

Therefore, that you may rejoice in seeing him again, and that I may be less anxious.

    07:01-07:07

So receive him in the Lord with all joy, and honor such men.

    07:08-07:23

For he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was lacking in your service to me." I'd like to remind you that the Apostle Paul, when he wrote this, was in a prison in Rome.

    07:24-07:27

And he was actually in a private house, chained to a guard.

    07:30-07:31

And he would have had some needs.

    07:33-07:34

    Well, Timothy was with him.

    07:35-07:38

We saw in Philippians 1, 1, Timothy was with him.

    07:38-07:39

    You're like, why?

    07:40-07:41

    Well, because he always was.

    07:43-07:45

Timothy was always right there with Paul and for Paul.

    07:45-07:46

We're going to talk about that.

    07:48-07:56

And the Philippian church, to whom Paul wrote this letter, they actually sent Epaphroditus to minister to Paul's needs.

    07:56-07:58

They heard that he was in prison and he had needs.

    07:58-07:59

They're like, we're going to help meet these needs.

    08:00-08:00

What are we going to do?

    08:01-08:01

    You know what?

    08:02-08:32

Epaphroditus, and he took an offering and I'm sure some other things to help meet some of Paul's needs. And in this section Paul is just talking about the faithfulness of these two men. Also keep in mind during this day that there were no cell phones. I know it's hard to imagine. What did we do before cell phones? And now they're called smartphones, right? Except for mine. I'm not I'm not gonna tell you what I call mine.

    08:34-08:35

    They didn't have cell phones.

    08:36-08:39

It wasn't like, Paul's like, "Oh, Paphroditus is here.

    08:39-08:43

"I'm just gonna call them and say thank you." Couldn't do it.

    08:44-08:45

    They couldn't Skype.

    08:46-08:47

    They couldn't FaceTime.

    08:47-08:48

    They couldn't email.

    08:48-08:51

They didn't have CNN to see what was happening in the world.

    08:51-08:51

    They didn't have the internet.

    08:52-08:55

They didn't have NBC, ABC, CBS.

    08:56-08:57

They didn't have any of that.

    08:59-09:05

To get the news, someone had to come and report it.

    09:07-09:11

If news is going to travel, somebody had to take the message and go report it.

    09:15-09:23

So Paul's sort of giving an update, not just on his condition, but he's, why is he talking about these two men?

    09:23-09:24

Well, look at verse 29 again.

    09:26-09:29

I want you to underline or highlight these three words.

    09:29-09:41

last three words in the verse where he says, "Honor such men." Honor such men.

    09:42-09:58

And sometimes, you know what we do in the church, when we have somebody who is an exemplary example, someone who is such a stellar role model, sometimes in the name of humility, we just sort of, oh, he does it for the Lord.

    09:59-10:01

We don't need to recognize him, he does it for the Lord.

    10:03-10:04

    And I get that.

    10:05-10:08

But do you know what else I get is exactly what Paul's doing here.

    10:09-10:10

    You should honor people.

    10:11-10:18

You know, what does Paul say in Romans 13, "Do not withhold honor from him that is due." There's a time to honor people.

    10:20-10:22

In the right context, in the right way.

    10:22-10:24

And that's exactly what he's calling for here.

    10:24-10:26

He's holding these men up as an example.

    10:27-10:34

And over and over and over in Philippians, if you've been here at all, we've been talking about three things.

    10:35-10:38

That's been humility, selflessness, and joy.

    10:39-10:44

Obviously all under the big heading of Jesus, who we talk about every week.

    10:44-10:45

    But what about Jesus?

    10:48-10:53

It's about his humility and selflessness and joy and how that manifests in us and through us.

    10:55-10:58

But the question we have on the table is, What does that look like?

    10:59-11:06

Well, he already talked about the example of Jesus Christ, and obviously, Jesus is always the ultimate example.

    11:09-11:14

And we can certainly look at the Apostle Paul, who would be a great example.

    11:15-11:19

But here he gives us two other men, and why does he do that?

    11:20-11:21

    Well, jot this down.

    11:22-11:26

We are much better at following a model than trying to live out a principle.

    11:30-11:32

That's why we're going through this passage today.

    11:32-11:35

We're much better at following a model than trying to live out a principle.

    11:39-11:43

See, principles sort of tell the duty, so to speak.

    11:44-11:45

    Here's what to do.

    11:47-11:50

Models or examples show that it's possible.

    11:51-12:02

For example, if I said, you know, one of the virtues that the Bible lifts up is humility, and you're like, okay, well, what's humility?

    12:04-12:05

    What is humility?

    12:06-12:11

Well, it's, some people say, well, it's sort of thinking less of yourself.

    12:11-12:15

And, you know, I would say, well, it's more of not thinking of yourself at all.

    12:17-12:23

And we can sort of conceptualize this abstract idea of what humility is, but do you know what's even easier than that?

    12:24-12:27

It's pointing to someone who models humility.

    12:28-12:30

Says right there, you wanna see what humility is?

    12:30-12:31

    Look at this guy.

    12:32-12:33

    This guy is humble.

    12:34-12:36

    He's an example of humility.

    12:36-12:38

That's sort of what Paul's doing here.

    12:38-12:38

    Is everybody with me?

    12:41-12:41

    Everybody with me?

    12:44-12:47

All right, anybody ready for some more Chuck Norris jokes?

    12:49-12:50

Look, no, look 'em up yourself.

    12:52-12:52

    (laughing)

    12:55-12:58

Bible's our middle name, that's what we're going after here.

    12:58-12:59

    I wanna be real.

    13:00-13:02

    And we read the passage.

    13:05-13:08

Let's check out what real disciples say, okay?

    13:09-13:11

    Here's what real disciples say.

    13:11-13:16

And on your outline, Paul says, "Exhibit A, Timothy.

    13:18-13:22

This is what selfless service looks like.

    13:25-13:27

This is what selfless service looks like.

    13:29-13:33

You know, we talked about selflessness, we talked about humility, we talked about the work of the Lord.

    13:34-13:35

    What does that look like?

    13:35-13:36

Paul says, it looks like Timothy.

    13:38-13:38

    Why?

    13:38-13:41

Because here's three things that Timothy says, they're all straight from the text.

    13:42-13:44

But the first one is this, I care about people.

    13:47-13:48

    I care about people.

    13:48-13:50

I want you to look at verse 20 again with me.

    13:55-13:59

Paul says, what a statement this is.

    14:00-14:16

"For I have no one like him who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare." I have no one like him.

    14:21-14:23

So Taylor Brown, you're in school studying for the ministry.

    14:23-14:25

How many people did Paul minister to?

    14:25-14:26

    Can you ballpark that?

    14:27-14:27

    It's a lot, isn't it?

    14:28-14:30

It's a lot, it's fresher in your mind than it is on mine.

    14:30-14:31

    But it's a lot, right?

    14:31-14:32

Did you say more than 12?

    14:33-14:34

    More than 100?

    14:34-14:35

    Yeah, right, keep going.

    14:35-14:37

How many people has Paul ministered to?

    14:37-14:40

    Planted churches, discipled?

    14:42-14:43

    Thousands, would you say thousands?

    14:44-15:03

So would you agree with me that it's sad that Paul's like, "I don't have anybody like Timothy, just him." On one hand, it's great to be as Timothy, I hate to be the pessimist here, but I just think it's sad that here's a man whose whole life was dedicated into pouring into people.

    15:05-15:11

And he's like, "Okay, I'm gonna make a list of the people that I really believe have a genuine concern and care for the church.

    15:11-15:18

I'm gonna make a list, you ready?" Timothy, true.

    15:24-15:24

    Right?

    15:25-15:26

    Is that what he said?

    15:26-15:28

He said, "I don't have anybody like him.

    15:29-15:37

I don't have anybody like Timothy." Genuine concern for other people.

    15:37-15:41

So let me ask you, are you genuinely concerned about others?

    15:41-15:43

Here's a quick test for you, all right?

    15:46-15:51

'Cause right now we're in church mode, so we're like, yeah, that's a shame that Paul didn't have me.

    15:54-15:56

I'm like the John Wayne of caring.

    15:58-16:01

I'm like the Michael Jordan of compassion.

    16:06-16:08

Well, let's see, let's take a little test.

    16:10-16:12

Are you genuinely concerned about other people?

    16:12-16:13

Here's just a little test for you.

    16:13-16:17

Number one, how much do you pray for other people?

    16:19-16:30

Versus how much of your prayer, if you pray, is focused solely on yourself, your needs, me, me, me, God give me, God give me, God give me, God give me, amen.

    16:31-16:42

How much of your prayer is, I have this burden for this family and I have this burden for this friend That's an indicator that you genuinely care.

    16:44-16:51

When your private prayer life consists of praying for other people, are you genuinely concerned?

    16:51-16:52

Here's another question for you, number two.

    16:53-17:01

When was the last time you sent an email, or called, or texted, or whatever, just to ask how someone is?

    17:03-17:05

You know, that person you know is going through a hard time.

    17:05-17:08

When was the last time that you just, "Hey, I just haven't talked to you in a while.

    17:08-17:13

"I wanna know how you're doing." Do you do that?

    17:16-17:17

    Here's a third question.

    17:17-17:24

How much money do you give to missions, whether it's through the local church, international, et cetera?

    17:25-17:28

Like, well, I don't know if that's a good question to ask.

    17:28-17:31

Well, Jesus said that where your treasure is there, your heart will be also.

    17:32-17:44

Jesus said, "You find out where you spend your money, "you find out where your heart is." If you really care, if you really care, your checkbook reflects that.

    17:46-17:47

    It's an objective test.

    17:47-17:48

    There's nothing to argue about.

    17:50-17:52

You show me your checkbook, I'll show you where your heart is.

    17:54-17:55

    I care about people.

    17:56-17:57

That's what selfless service looks like.

    17:57-17:58

    I care about people.

    17:59-18:01

Secondly, I'm focused solely on Christ.

    18:01-18:03

This is sort of attached to the first one.

    18:05-18:06

    Look at verse 21 again.

    18:06-18:18

He says, "For they all seek their own interests, "not those of Jesus Christ." Like to remind you that the interest of Jesus Christ is being concerned for others.

    18:18-18:20

We're gonna talk about that in a second here.

    18:22-18:26

What I wanna focus here, he says, "They all seek after their own interests." What does that look like?

    18:29-18:32

Well, it'd be easy for us to kind of gloss over this and villainize those people, right?

    18:33-18:39

Like, okay, we're reading here and Paul's like, "For they all seek their own interest." You know who he's talking about, right?

    18:39-18:43

Those pagans, those Judaizers, those Pharisees.

    18:43-18:44

That's who he's talking about right here.

    18:46-18:49

Paul's getting on those, what do you call those?

    18:49-18:50

    Apostates?

    18:51-18:53

That's who Paul's after right here.

    18:56-18:59

No, he deals with them in chapter three.

    18:59-19:01

    Who's he talking about here?

    19:02-19:06

    He's talking about disciples, right?

    19:06-19:14

Look at verse 20, he says, "I have no one like him "who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare, "for they all," he's talking about people that he has.

    19:18-19:22

He says, okay, so there's Timothy who genuinely cares, and you're like, all right, Paul, I gotta ask.

    19:23-19:25

You have one guy that really cares.

    19:27-19:29

What would you say about the rest of the guys you have?

    19:30-19:39

And here he says, "They all seek after their own interests." We're not talking about pagans here, we're talking about fellow believers.

    19:42-19:51

And we have a lot of people sitting in this room right now, and the question is, how many of you fit in verse 21 to say, "I'm really just concerned about my own interests.

    19:53-20:00

"My time, my money, my effort, my energy as in pursuit of my interests.

    20:00-20:05

Now I said before about, you know, if you let me see your checkbook, I'll tell you where your heart is.

    20:05-20:06

    Here's another test for you.

    20:07-20:08

Keep a checkbook of your time.

    20:10-20:11

Keep a checkbook of your time.

    20:11-20:12

    Have you ever done that?

    20:13-20:14

I did that for a season.

    20:14-20:15

I learned a lot about myself.

    20:17-20:18

Keep a checkbook of your time.

    20:18-20:22

How much time have you been spending, you know, on the internet, watching TV?

    20:25-20:27

And we're not even talking about evil things, okay?

    20:30-20:32

We're talking about things that are just okay.

    20:36-20:38

And that's what Paul's talking about here.

    20:38-20:39

    Do you see that?

    20:39-20:40

He says they seek their own interests.

    20:40-20:44

They just spend their time on, their energy on, you know, what is it?

    20:44-20:50

My new fishing boat or, you know, my hobby, this, or.

    20:53-20:57

He says that's what they're concerned, he says, not those of Jesus Christ.

    21:01-21:05

So that's why when he's talking about Timothy, what does Timothy say?

    21:05-21:07

He says, I'm focused solely on Christ.

    21:08-21:17

That's why Timothy was so concerned about people, because you're gonna find that the more you grow in your walk with Jesus Christ, the more you're going to be concerned for people.

    21:21-21:24

You know, before I became a Christian, I couldn't have given a rip about any of you.

    21:26-21:30

Well, maybe Darren, but the rest of you, I wouldn't have cared about any of you.

    21:31-21:34

And that's something that changed when I came to Christ.

    21:35-21:39

That was something that God worked in me, was you see people different, right?

    21:43-21:46

And that's what Timothy was really experiencing here.

    21:46-21:54

He's like, "I care about people because I am so focused on Christ, that being focused on Christ means I'm focused on Christ's mission.

    21:54-21:56

And Christ's mission is about people.

    21:59-22:00

    It's about reaching the lost.

    22:02-22:06

It's about equipping and discipling the saved.

    22:11-22:15

Third thing Timothy says, I submit to godly leadership.

    22:17-22:24

Verse 23, "I submit to godly leadership." I'm sorry, verse 22.

    22:25-22:38

"You know, Timothy's proven worth, "how as a son with a father, "he has served with me in the gospel." As a son with a father.

    22:41-22:42

    What a picture that is.

    22:46-22:52

Like a kid sitting down with his dad, learning how to do something together, working on a project together.

    22:53-22:54

That's sort of the picture here.

    22:59-23:01

    I submit to godly leadership.

    23:03-23:05

    When was Paul sending Timothy?

    23:06-23:07

    Did you see that?

    23:07-23:23

He says, "I hope therefore to send them," verse 23, "just as soon as I see how it will go with me." So when are you sending Timothy? Paul says, "When I'm ready." Does Timothy get a say in that? No, not so much.

    23:26-23:32

Like, well, didn't Timothy have a life? Like, did Timothy, like, did he have a family?

    23:32-23:36

Did he have, like, anything outside of the ministry? I don't know.

    23:36-23:44

Because when I see Timothy in Scripture, what I see is somebody so focused on Christ and so focused on Christ's people.

    23:49-23:53

And it all came down to submitting to the leadership that God put over him.

    23:54-23:56

Timothy was a pastor's best friend.

    23:57-24:01

He was competent himself, but he was completely at your service.

    24:02-24:14

And just to tell you, you know, a little insight to the heart of a pastor, nothing means as much to a pastor as the person that says, "I love you, I support you, and I'm here to do whatever you need." That means the world to a pastor.

    24:17-24:22

For that person that comes and says, "Look, I'm on board with what the mission of this church is.

    24:24-25:04

So let's get to it. Tell me what I need to do and let's get to it, because this is about the kingdom of Christ. This is about making disciples." submit to godly leadership. So that's a little bit about Timothy. Selfless service, selfless service, completely. My life is a result of Christ, it's for Christ, it's dedicated to Christ. Let's move on to Epaphroditus. Exhibit B. Epaphroditus, "This is what selfless endurance looks like." Write down the word endurance.

    25:07-25:15

The reason that Paul highlighted Epaphroditus, there's some different things that were going on with him that weren't going on with Timothy that we wanna call your attention to.

    25:16-25:20

Well, Paul says, "I'm sending Epaphroditus back to you." Like, why?

    25:20-25:29

Like, you know, the Philippian church was like, "We sent him to take care of you, Paul." And Paul's like, "Yeah, I'm sending him back to you." Well, why are you sending him back to us?

    25:30-25:31

Well, did you see it in the text?

    25:34-25:34

    Did you see it?

    25:36-25:42

Verse 26, Epaphroditus was distressed because you heard that he was ill.

    25:43-25:46

And I'll be honest with you, you're like, how did those messages get relayed?

    25:46-25:47

    I have no idea.

    25:48-26:04

Obviously it was through people traveling in the news, but somehow Epaphroditus heard that the church was all upset because they knew he was ill, but they really weren't sure what happened to him.

    26:09-26:10

    Sort of like mom, right?

    26:11-26:15

Sort of like mom, like if mom calls and you don't answer your phone, what's the conclusion?

    26:16-26:17

    He's dead.

    26:20-26:21

That's happened to me a lot.

    26:25-26:35

If my mom calls and I don't answer the phone, you can be sure I'm in a ditch somewhere or I'm being eaten by wolves.

    26:37-26:39

    The bandit has got me.

    26:39-26:41

I was struck by lightning, something.

    26:42-26:43

    You can be sure.

    26:43-26:50

And that's sort of what's happening here is the Philippian church was sort of like mom, like, well, the papyrus is sick, he must be dead.

    26:50-26:52

And they were like, so like freaking out.

    26:52-26:54

Like we love this guy and he might be dead.

    26:54-26:57

And Paul's like, "I'm sending him back, okay?

    26:58-26:59

"Epaphroditus, you go home, all right?

    27:00-27:09

"Go tell them to calm down." So, Epaphroditus, what kind of guy was he?

    27:09-27:11

    Well, look at verse 25.

    27:13-27:15

I'm not gonna flesh these all out.

    27:15-27:16

    You see what he's saying.

    27:17-27:19

What did Paul think of Epaphroditus?

    27:19-27:23

He says, "He's my brother, he's my fellow worker, He's my fellow soldier.

    27:26-27:31

He's your messenger and your minister to my need.

    27:32-27:35

So what do you think Paul's opinion of Epaphroditus was?

    27:35-27:36

    Thumbs up or thumbs down?

    27:37-27:39

    Yeah, big thumbs up, right?

    27:39-27:40

    That's quite a list there.

    27:44-27:48

So what does selfless endurance look like?

    27:48-27:50

Well, here are three things that Epaphroditus says.

    27:50-27:52

Number one, I care about the church.

    27:52-27:55

Again, he was distressed because the Philippians heard that he was ill.

    27:58-28:01

He was distressed because the Philippians heard that he was ill.

    28:02-28:03

    Erin's not here today.

    28:03-28:11

I told her not to come because coming down 79, there were cars like everywhere, literally on their side, wrong way on 79.

    28:11-28:12

    It was crazy.

    28:12-28:13

So I said, don't even come.

    28:16-28:18

So don't tell her what I'm about to tell you.

    28:18-28:19

    (audience laughing)

    28:20-28:21

    Promise?

    28:23-28:25

    Mark Bloomingdale says no.

    28:25-28:27

Mark, can you cover your ears for a few minutes?

    28:30-28:34

I will confess that when I am sick, I am a big baby.

    28:36-28:37

    I am a big baby.

    28:38-28:39

Of course, I never tell my wife that.

    28:40-28:40

    No, I can handle it.

    28:40-28:42

    I'm not a baby when I'm sick.

    28:42-28:44

    I am a baby when I'm sick.

    28:44-28:48

When I'm sick, it's like call off everything, right?

    28:48-28:50

It's like, but it's just a little cold.

    28:50-28:53

Like forget it, I'm not doing a thing.

    28:55-28:57

That happened to me a couple of weeks ago.

    28:57-28:59

I had the flu and guess what I did for two days?

    29:00-29:03

Nothing, I did nothing for two days.

    29:04-29:08

I had to work like crazy to get caught up because that amount of work remains, right?

    29:09-29:10

    You know how it goes.

    29:12-29:17

So Epaphroditus, I don't know what his illness was, but here's what I do know about his illness.

    29:17-29:18

Did you see it in the text?

    29:19-29:20

    How serious was it?

    29:22-29:24

    It almost killed him, okay?

    29:24-29:26

So it wasn't like he had the sniffles.

    29:26-29:28

He had something that almost killed him.

    29:29-29:30

And it's like, dude, you know what?

    29:30-29:32

Why don't you just chill out for a while?

    29:33-29:34

He's like, no, they're concerned, I gotta get back.

    29:36-29:37

    That's care for the church.

    29:39-29:45

You're like, yeah, you know, Pastor Jeff, this is awfully weak because you said kind of the same thing about Timothy, concern for people, concern for the church.

    29:46-29:47

    Isn't it the same thing?

    29:47-29:49

And the answer is yes, it is the same thing.

    29:50-29:53

Like, well, why is it like twice in the same sermon?

    29:53-29:57

Because nothing else happens without this.

    29:59-29:59

    You see?

    30:00-30:09

It's not like, well, Timothy's great because he cares about people, and Epaphroditus is great, well, he doesn't really care about people, but he's got some other really cool things happening.

    30:11-30:15

In both cases, it's love for Christ's people, love for the church.

    30:15-30:17

    It has to start there.

    30:19-30:31

Remember Peter, on the beach with Jesus, Jesus said, "Do you love me?" Peter says, "I love you." What did Jesus say three times?

    30:31-30:31

    What did he say?

    30:32-30:35

"Feed my sheep." Do you love me?

    30:37-30:38

and take care of my people.

    30:41-30:46

And I'd like to remind you, here at Harvest Bible Chapel, we are not selling cookies, okay?

    30:46-30:51

We're not in the business of screwing toothpaste caps onto toothpaste.

    30:51-30:53

We're in the business of caring for people.

    30:53-30:54

    Do you understand that?

    30:56-31:18

We're in the business of, and I say business in quotes, but I'm not doing the annoying air quotes, but we're in the business of Representing Jesus Christ, letting Christ's life be at work through us on the earth, and that always, always, always, always looks like loving and caring for and ministering to people.

    31:20-31:22

There is no ministry apart from people.

    31:23-31:24

    Believe me, I looked.

    31:25-31:28

I looked for a long time.

    31:28-31:31

Can I be involved in ministry but not deal with people?

    31:32-31:34

Do you know what the answer to that question is?

    31:35-31:36

    The answer is no.

    31:38-31:40

    The answer is no.

    31:41-31:43

We're in the business of caring for people.

    31:44-31:49

But I'd like to remind you of this, disciple makers, disciplers.

    31:52-31:55

It can be easy to romanticize church work.

    31:58-32:34

It can be easy to romanticize because when you think about ministry, you think of that guy that comes to Christ guy that's just growing and then all of a sudden he's out preaching on the street corner and thousands of people are flocking and we can romanticize church work but the bottom line is church work is about people and their problems. Church work is about people and their good points too. Please hear me church work is also about people and their growth points.

    32:37-32:40

And that's why sometimes we get frustrated in ministry.

    32:42-32:45

Yeah, I've done a lot of counseling over the years and sometimes just, oh, don't you get it?

    32:45-32:46

    Don't you see it?

    32:47-32:48

    Why can't you see it?

    32:51-32:55

Because just like me, that person has some growth points.

    32:58-32:59

    Don't let those discourage you.

    33:00-33:03

If you're dealing with people, you're going to have to deal with growth points.

    33:03-33:06

And if you're in ministry, that means you're going to have to deal with people.

    33:10-33:11

Like, well, I don't like dealing with people.

    33:14-33:15

Well, then you better check yourself.

    33:18-33:19

So I care about the church.

    33:20-33:21

    Two more things.

    33:21-33:22

    Can you handle it?

    33:22-33:24

Number two, I won't let suffering stop me.

    33:24-33:25

    Look at verse 27.

    33:27-33:31

Indeed, he was ill, near to death, but God had mercy on him.

    33:33-33:34

    I think this is hilarious.

    33:37-33:43

God had mercy on him, and not only on him, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

    33:44-33:45

Did you catch the humor there?

    33:46-33:50

I don't think Paul was like intentionally trying to be funny, but I think it's kind of funny.

    33:50-33:54

But Paul's like, so he was really sick and he almost died.

    33:55-33:56

And God had mercy on him and he's alive.

    33:56-34:06

But you know, as a result, God also had mercy on me 'Cause let's be honest, how bad would I have felt if the guy that was sent to take care of me like croaked on the way?

    34:07-34:08

You catch it's kind of funny.

    34:08-34:09

He's like, "It would have been really sad for me.

    34:09-34:20

"God had mercy on me because I would have been really sad "if Epaphroditus would have just like face planted "dead as a doornail in the dirt "on the way to take care of me.

    34:20-34:23

"I would have felt really, really horrible about that.

    34:23-34:32

"So God had mercy on me by letting him live." Well, jot this down, ministry isn't always going to go as you expect.

    34:34-34:36

That's a lesson that we learned from Epaphroditus.

    34:37-34:40

Ministry isn't always going to go as you expect.

    34:44-34:50

So many times over the past couple of years, people have asked me, you know, "What's church planning like?

    34:50-34:53

"What's church planning like?" And maybe some of you have asked me, do you remember my answer?

    34:54-34:55

This has been my like standard answer.

    34:56-34:58

Everything I've expected to happen has not.

    35:00-35:03

And everything that I never expected would have happened has.

    35:05-35:05

    Every time.

    35:06-35:07

    Every time.

    35:11-35:14

Well, Epaphroditus was certainly testimony to that.

    35:15-35:18

Because you're sitting there right now thinking, well, how could God have let him get sick?

    35:19-35:19

    Right?

    35:21-35:25

Didn't God know that Epaphroditus was going to Rome to minister to Paul?

    35:25-36:25

God know that? God wasn't cc'd on the email was he? Epaphroditus wasn't taking a vacation, he was going to take care of Paul. So how could God have let him get sick? Well suffering is coming and listen you don't get a pass just because you're serving God. All right? That's the lesson from Epaphroditus. Some people think well I'm serving God therefore I'm not gonna get sick. Nothing bad's gonna to happen to me because I'm serving God and he's got my back." Well, Paphroditus learned that serving God means, "I almost died." Maybe you're sitting here saying things like this right now, "You know, ever since I joined that small group, I've been having money problems. Maybe that's God's way of telling me that I shouldn't be in that small group." That's a lie from the devil. Yeah, God's telling you, "I don't want you involved in making disciples despite what my son said. No! Ridiculous!

    36:27-36:50

Well, ever since I started playing with the worship team, I've had health problems. My answer to that is maybe you're playing wrong. But that's not a sign from God that you shouldn't be on the worship team, any more than it was a "It's a sign from God that Epaphroditus "shouldn't have gone to Rome to take care of Paul.

    36:51-36:59

"Therefore God hit him with like the ultimate flu whammy." You know, these things must be a sign from God that I'm on the wrong track, right?

    36:59-36:59

    Wrong.

    37:00-37:08

A little reminder for you, just in case we forgot, suffering is normal.

    37:11-37:13

    Suffering is normal.

    37:13-37:17

This is a fallen world, which is full of fallen people.

    37:17-37:24

The world is under a curse and Jesus promised, in this world you will have trouble.

    37:25-37:29

So where in the world did we get the idea that we should all be shocked by hardship or struggling?

    37:30-37:31

    Where did that come from?

    37:31-37:33

Oh, it got hard all of a sudden.

    37:34-37:34

    Yeah.

    37:37-37:38

    It will.

    37:42-37:50

So you're either in hardship now, or you're about 15 minutes away from a trial.

    37:52-37:58

And maybe there's someone here that's just coming out of one, which just means you're just about to get into another one.

    37:58-38:01

Trials are going to come, but this is the question.

    38:03-38:04

Please hear me, this is the question.

    38:06-38:09

Trials are going to come, but are they going to stop you?

    38:10-38:11

    That's the question.

    38:21-38:30

Whether you're in ministry or preparing to get into ministry, it's going to get a lot harder before it gets a lot easier.

    38:31-38:32

Is it going to stop you?

    38:34-38:36

Is it going to stop you?

    38:39-38:41

    Epaphroditus said no.

    38:43-38:45

    Even though he almost died.

    38:47-38:49

And this leads us to our final point.

    38:51-39:04

Epaphroditus says, I finished the job, I finished the job, look at verse 30 again, Paul reminds us for he nearly died for the work of Christ, risking his life.

    39:08-39:25

"to," circle this word in your Bible, "complete, "to complete what was lacking in your service to me." He's like, "I got a job to do, I'm going to finish it." This is what you need to see about Epaphroditus.

    39:25-39:31

Don't leave here going, "Wow, Epaphroditus suffered, wow!" That wasn't his high point, okay?

    39:32-39:35

That wasn't what he got marked for because, newsflash, everybody suffers.

    39:37-39:42

What Epaphroditus gets points for is that he finished the job.

    39:43-39:44

That's what he gets points for.

    39:45-39:48

He nearly died, but he finished the job.

    39:51-39:59

Everybody suffers, but few people endure, and very few people finish.

    40:01-40:05

And apparently that's all the concern to Epaphroditus was finishing the job.

    40:07-40:08

    finishing the job.

    40:13-40:17

There are a lot of excuses that we can give to not finish the job that God's put before us.

    40:19-40:19

    There's a lot of excuses.

    40:21-40:34

My wife's really not into me being involved at the church or my kids are at an age where this or the other, or here's an excuse, I almost died.

    40:36-40:52

That was Epaphroditus's excuse, but did it stop him? No. So here it is, if you have any excuse which is anything less than "I almost died," then your excuse is lame.

    40:53-41:12

Okay? Because here we have a guy that wouldn't let that stop him. By faith, by By trusting in God's sustaining grace, you need to learn to say four important words and say them often.

    41:17-41:19

I'm gonna give you a run at these words, you ready?

    41:20-41:22

Here are the four words, I will not quit.

    41:24-41:25

    Can you say that?

    41:25-41:26

I'm gonna give you, you ready?

    41:28-41:29

    On the count of three.

    41:31-41:32

I want you to close your eyes.

    41:32-41:34

You're not saying this to me.

    41:35-41:36

You're not saying this to the person beside you.

    41:38-41:39

I want you to say this unto the Lord.

    41:40-41:40

    Close your eyes.

    41:42-41:45

I want you to say, "I will not quit." You ready?

    41:45-41:47

    One, two, three.

    41:52-41:54

Rest in that for a second.

    41:58-41:59

    Say it again.

    41:59-42:00

    You ready?

    42:00-42:05

One, two, three, I will not quit.

    42:09-42:11

Can you say that and mean it?

    42:12-42:15

Can you say that despite what's coming?

    42:17-42:18

Knowing that you don't know what's coming?

    42:20-42:24

This decision needs made ahead of time.

    42:25-42:31

You can't make the decision on whether you're going to endure or not on the spot.

    42:32-42:34

You need to make the decision ahead of time.

    42:34-42:48

You need to say, "No matter how hard things get, "no matter who abandons me, no matter what it costs me, "no matter the discouragement that surely is going to come, "I will not quit." Do you know how many times I've prayed that prayer?

    42:53-43:17

And many times I've been praying it in faith, saying, "God, I'm not feeling it right now, but as an act of will, crying out for your sustaining grace that I know that you'll give me, God, I do not want to quit. So God, by your grace, I will not quit. I will not quit." Finish the job.

    43:21-43:56

So in closing, I'd like to remind you of verse 29. You should have it underlined in your Bible, honor such men, honor such men, people that love the church, that stay focused, that work through hardship, that finish the job. These people should be honored because they're an example, because they are inspiring, and because They are rare.

  • 00:01-00:56

I want to be real. We've been talking about one subject in particular as we've been going through Philippians. And what's that subject? Joy, right? Joy. All in favor of joy? Okay. Me too. Well, through Philippians we've seen a call to unity which is achieved through humility and it's modeled by Christ. But here's the problem. Unity and humility and joy can all be faked. True or false? Can you fake unity, humility, and joy? Can you fake that? Absolutely you can. And we are so We're so outraged when we see hypocrisy in others, aren't we?

    00:58-01:05

When you see someone else being a hypocrite, doesn't that bother you?

    01:09-01:27

Some people say, "Well, the church is just full "of hypocrites." And my answer to that is, "We have room for more." But we're outraged when we see it in others, But here's the thing, if we can be honest, we're discouraged when we see it in ourselves, aren't we?

    01:29-01:30

    Anybody else?

    01:31-01:34

When I see hypocrisy in my life, it discourages me.

    01:36-01:43

I'm like, "Really, Jeff, you know better." And you're going through the motions and it's discouraging.

    01:44-01:47

That's why the title of this message is, I wanna be real.

    01:49-01:50

Now, how many people are in favor of that?

    01:50-01:51

    Let's be real.

    01:51-01:52

    How many in favor?

    01:52-01:54

Okay, so we're gonna give you a run at this.

    01:54-01:57

We're working on this and someday we're going to be really good at this.

    01:58-02:10

But I'm going to give you a chance to say in your best preacher voice with conviction, I want you to say, I wanna be real.

    02:11-02:11

    Are you ready?

    02:12-02:13

    One, two, three.

    02:14-02:15

    I wanna be real.

    02:15-02:17

That wasn't bad for a first attempt.

    02:17-02:21

Let's do one more because I think you're really close.

    02:22-02:22

    Are you ready?

    02:22-02:24

    One, two, three.

    02:25-02:26

    One, two, three.

    02:26-02:26

    Okay.

    02:29-02:30

    Then let's go after this.

    02:32-02:37

Philippians 2, we're gonna be picking up where we picked off, where we picked off, where we left off.

    02:39-02:40

    Yeah, nobody got picked off.

    02:41-02:43

Yeah, Ken's not gonna get picked off today.

    02:45-02:47

Where we left off last week.

    02:50-02:52

    Verse 12, Philippians 2, 12.

    02:53-03:00

He says, "Therefore," therefore is always a big word in the Bible, as you know, because that's linking everything that was said before.

    03:01-03:04

Now here's what I'm going to tell you based on that.

    03:04-03:23

"Because Jesus Christ is Lord, "because all will acknowledge that, "and because humility results in exultation." And I would suggest to you this one, "Because Christ is real." a real model for us in unity and humility and joy.

    03:24-03:40

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence.

    03:41-03:42

Let's stop there for a second.

    03:42-03:43

    Does that sound familiar?

    03:44-03:47

Paul said like the same thing in chapter one, verse 27, didn't he?

    03:49-03:52

You've obeyed not only in my presence, but much more in my absence.

    03:53-03:59

Do you have a feeling that Paul sort of sees himself like the parent leaving the child with the babysitter?

    03:59-04:00

    Did you get that?

    04:00-04:02

That's what I kind of pick up in Philippians.

    04:02-04:14

He's like, you know, parents, what's a little, you know, the thing with the babysitter, you know, here's what they're supposed to do, and make sure this, and make sure...

    04:16-04:21

But then parents, what's the little speech that you give your children before you leave them with the babysitter?

    04:23-04:30

Don't you give them a speech something like, "Look, so-and-so's in charge. I want you to listen to them.

    04:30-04:40

Don't be rude. Don't be mouthy. Make sure that you go to bed on time. Make sure you do your homework." Don't you give them a speech something like that, parents? Something like that?

    04:41-04:44

That's sort of what Paul's like here, isn't it?

    04:44-04:49

Like, look, whether I'm there or I'm not there, okay?

    04:50-04:51

Whether I'm there or I'm not there.

    04:52-04:54

So jot this down, first of all, in your outline.

    04:55-04:57

    I wanna be real, work.

    04:59-05:01

    No hypocrisy in my faith.

    05:03-05:05

    No hypocrisy in my faith.

    05:08-05:12

So therefore, my beloved, that's Paul's way of saying you are loved.

    05:13-05:22

My beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now not only is it my presence, but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

    05:25-05:26

    I'm gonna pause there.

    05:29-05:36

Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

    05:38-05:39

    We've been talking about humility.

    05:39-05:43

We've been talking about putting other people ahead of yourselves.

    05:43-05:49

And you're like, well, is there ever a time that I should like focus on myself instead of focusing on other people?

    05:49-05:50

    Yeah, actually there is.

    05:51-05:54

And it comes to working out your own salvation.

    05:56-05:58

Because what do we typically do as Christians?

    05:58-06:06

We are better at judging other people's salvation and other people's walk with the Lord than we are at examining our own, true or false.

    06:08-06:09

    True or false?

    06:10-06:10

    True.

    06:10-06:12

All right, don't leave me up here.

    06:16-06:18

Ending hypocrisy has to start here.

    06:20-06:34

That's why he says, "Work out your own salvation, not work out your husband's salvation, wives." You can't do that, even though you think you can.

    06:35-06:40

Husbands, you can't work out your wife's salvation. You think you can, but you cannot.

    06:43-06:47

The Bible says to work out your own salvation.

    06:51-07:05

So Paul says, "Yeah, here's a time you focus on yourself. You need to look at your own walk with the Lord." Like in 2 Corinthians, he says, "Examine yourselves to see if you're in the faith." Work out your own salvation.

    07:07-07:11

Now this word for work literally means continual effort.

    07:13-07:28

What it means is to demonstrate your conversion, and without being cliche, maybe you've heard this, but it's very appropriate here, but the question is, if you were arrested for being a Christian, would there be enough evidence to convict you?

    07:31-07:34

It's cliche, but I think it became cliche for a reason.

    07:34-07:35

    It's a good question.

    07:36-07:46

If you were arrested for being a Christian and they put you on the stand, would there be enough evidence to convict you of being a Christian?

    07:49-07:50

That's what he's talking about here.

    07:52-08:08

He says, "Work out your own salvation." Look at the next phrase, "With fear and trembling." Literally those two words in the Greek is where we get the words for the English, phobia and trauma, okay?

    08:09-08:12

Work out your salvation with phobia and trauma.

    08:13-08:15

    Like, what's that all about?

    08:15-08:17

That's not, you're like, that sounds pretty serious.

    08:20-08:20

    It is.

    08:24-08:25

    It's deadly serious.

    08:28-08:33

It's everything rides on this, Sirius.

    08:35-08:40

It's what is more important than this, Sirius?

    08:40-08:41

    I mean, think about it.

    08:42-08:44

What is more important than your standing with God?

    08:46-08:58

What is more important than examining whether you really have a born again, spirit-filled, spirit-led relationship with your creator?

    08:58-09:04

What's more important? I'll take suggestions now and we'll talk about that instead of this Bible.

    09:05-09:12

But if there's something more important than your eternal souls, let's get it on the table and we'll spend our time talking about that instead.

    09:13-09:15

See, that's what he's talking about with fear and trembling.

    09:17-09:20

This isn't something to joke about. This is deadly serious.

    09:24-09:30

So he says, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." And right now is where somebody says, "Oh, question.

    09:33-09:37

Pastor Jeff, you've told us many times that salvation is something that God does.

    09:37-09:41

So here it's saying that it's something that we're supposed to work out.

    09:42-10:26

Was Paul confused or did he forget something or is this a mistranslation or what's going on here. I'm so glad you asked. Look at verse 13. "For it is God who works in you, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Both to will and to work for His good pleasure. So the question is, if you look at verses 12 and "Work out your own salvation, for it is God who works." So who's working here? Is it God or is it me? And what's the answer?

    10:27-10:30

The answer is yes. The answer is yes.

    10:34-10:36

I need to spend a few minutes on this.

    10:40-10:49

All in favor of Bible study? Okay, everybody say, "That's why I'm here." Oh man, I'm so glad to hear that.

    10:49-10:51

Let's do a little Bible study together, shall we?

    10:53-10:54

    Listen, there is a tension.

    10:56-10:58

    There is a tension here.

    10:59-11:04

And the Bible never seeks to resolve this tension.

    11:06-11:15

And I want you to listen very closely because someone is going to leave here this morning misinterpreting what I'm saying.

    11:16-11:17

You can write that down in your notes.

    11:17-11:19

    Somebody's going to mishear this.

    11:19-11:27

Somebody's going to send me an email and say, "Well, you said this or you said that," and they're going to miss what I'm actually trying to communicate from the Bible.

    11:28-11:29

So I need you to listen very closely.

    11:33-11:39

There are tensions in the Bible that the Bible never seeks to resolve.

    11:43-11:52

And actually, tension exists in every major doctrine in the Bible.

    11:53-11:54

    Did you know that?

    11:54-11:57

Every major doctrine in the Bible, there's tension.

    11:58-12:01

That's one of the reasons we have so many different churches and denominations.

    12:03-12:12

People all over the board on the spectrum, so to speak, but there's tension in every major doctrine in the Bible.

    12:12-12:13

I'm gonna give you some examples here.

    12:13-12:15

If you wanna jot these down, I'm going to speak quickly.

    12:17-12:18

    So have your pen ready.

    12:19-12:32

For example, here's a doctrine that Christians get wrapped around the axle about, because of the tension, sparked many discussions and debates.

    12:33-12:35

    Let's talk about your salvation.

    12:35-12:38

Did you choose to follow Jesus Christ, or did God pick you?

    12:40-12:44

That's the issue of election versus free will.

    12:45-12:45

    Which is it?

    12:47-12:50

Did God pick you or did you pick God?

    12:51-12:51

    Which one?

    12:54-13:00

Well, according to Ephesians 1, 5, God picked us and many other passages, God picked us.

    13:04-13:10

But according to many other scriptures, we are called to make a choice as to whether we're going to follow God or not.

    13:12-13:13

So do you see the tension?

    13:17-13:20

And you're like, well, what do you believe about that, Pastor Jeff?

    13:20-13:22

And the answer is, I believe both.

    13:23-13:27

And you're like, well, that sounds like a lukewarm, you know, flip-flop answer.

    13:29-13:30

    But here's the thing.

    13:33-13:37

Ever since I was born, I've only ever known two things.

    13:38-13:42

    And that's time and space.

    13:43-13:45

Anybody else in there with me?

    13:46-13:50

Anybody else ever existed in any realm outside of time and space?

    13:51-13:52

    You see, I haven't.

    13:52-13:54

    That's all I've ever known.

    13:55-14:03

So there are some things that the Bible says about God, who by the way, exists outside of time and space, that aren't going to make sense to me.

    14:06-14:07

And I need to be okay with that.

    14:10-14:11

    Right?

    14:11-14:13

I just need to be okay with that.

    14:15-14:18

God is God and I am not.

    14:20-14:24

And if I could explain God, he would probably be too small for me to worship anyways.

    14:27-14:34

So is it okay that there's some things about God and about his word that I can say, you know what, I believe that, but I sure don't understand it?

    14:36-14:38

    Here's another one, repentance.

    14:41-14:48

Repentance, you know, Acts 17, 30 says, "God commands all men everywhere to repent." God commands repentance.

    14:49-14:50

    To who?

    14:50-14:51

    All men everywhere.

    14:52-14:56

But did you know 2 Timothy 2, 25 says that God grants repentance?

    14:57-14:58

It's like, well, which is it?

    14:58-15:00

    Are we commanded to repent?

    15:01-15:02

    Or does God grant repentance?

    15:03-15:14

what's the answer? Yes. You're like, well that doesn't make sense. It doesn't have to.

    15:16-15:34

You're not commanded to explain God. You're called to trust God. And he's bigger than your little mind and my little mind can wrap around. Here's another one. The fruit of the Spirit. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    15:35-15:40

Galatians 5, those are the ways that the Holy Spirit manifests himself through your life.

    15:43-15:54

But also in Galatians 5, Paul says, "Walk by the Spirit." So the Spirit does it, but there's also a command to walk by the Spirit.

    15:54-15:55

    What about the Bible?

    15:55-15:56

    Let's talk about the Bible.

    15:56-15:57

    Who wrote Philippians?

    15:59-16:00

    Who wrote Philippians?

    16:01-16:02

    Paul did, right?

    16:02-17:04

and wrong. Who wrote Philippians? The Holy Spirit did, right? And I'm not gonna say wrong on that one, but do you see the tension? Now when Paul wrote Philippians, was he in some kind of a trance? And when he woke up like, "Whoa, look what I wrote!" Somehow God used Paul and his choice of words and his personality and his circumstances, God used all that in such a way that when he wrote Philippians, Paul wrote it and the Holy Spirit wrote it. And I'll be honest with you, I can't explain that. All right? I just can't. But I'll tell you this, I've never lost a minute's sleep worried about it. Never. I've lost sleep over some other things, But I've never lost sleep. I just I can't get to sleep until I figure out who wrote Philippians. Was it the Holy Spirit or was it Paul?

    17:05-17:06

    It was both. Good night.

    17:08-17:16

Somehow Both are true. What about the person of Jesus Christ?

    17:20-17:23

    Was Jesus God or man?

    17:26-17:27

    Which one?

    17:28-17:36

You're like, "Well, he was both, right?" Okay, well, was he 50% God and 50% man?

    17:38-17:43

That's not really an accurate representation of Jesus.

    17:43-17:50

Jesus, according to the Bible, was 100% God and 100% man.

    17:50-17:55

You're like, "How can you be 100% of two things?" And once again, my answer is, I don't know.

    17:57-17:57

    I don't know.

    18:00-18:03

And even living a Christian life, listen to these verses.

    18:04-18:05

    Listen to these verses.

    18:06-18:08

    First Corinthians 15, 10.

    18:09-18:18

"But by the grace of God, I am what I am, "and His grace toward me was not in vain." It's like, okay, Paul, so your life is basically based on the grace of God, right?

    18:18-18:25

He says, "On the contrary, I worked harder "than any of them, though." Oh, okay, so God did a work, but you're working, Paul.

    18:26-18:27

    So it's your working.

    18:27-18:34

He says, "It was not I, "but the grace of God that was with me." So Paul, who's doing the work?

    18:34-18:39

And he's like, "God, me, God." Did you catch that?

    18:40-18:42

Galatians 2.20, he says, "I've been crucified with Christ.

    18:42-18:53

"It's no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me." Oh, okay, so Christ is living in you, So you don't really live at all now, right, Paul?

    18:53-18:55

It's just Christ lives in you and through you.

    18:56-19:08

He says, "In the life I now live in the flesh, "I live by faith in the Son of God." Wait a minute, Christ is living in me, but I live in faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.

    19:09-19:13

But these things don't contradict each other, they somehow complement each other.

    19:14-19:19

Philippians 3, we're gonna get to this next year, in January, I believe.

    19:20-19:27

but he says that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and may share in his sufferings becoming like him in his death.

    19:28-19:35

Look at this next phrase, that by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

    19:36-19:39

Like, well, Paul, you don't need to try to attain something.

    19:40-19:43

Christ purchased that for you through his death and resurrection.

    19:44-19:44

    Paul knew that.

    19:46-19:49

But you see the sense of, it's that tension.

    19:50-19:55

It's God works and I work and it's a compliment thing.

    19:56-19:59

    Couple more, Colossians 1, 28 and 29.

    20:01-20:04

Paul says, "Him we proclaim." We studied this last year about this time.

    20:04-20:11

"Him we proclaim, warning everyone "and teaching everyone with all wisdom "that we may present everyone mature in Christ.

    20:12-20:18

"For this I toil, struggling." And stop right there.

    20:19-20:26

Okay, so you're like, "Paul, this ministry you're doing, he's doing the work." He goes, "I am toiling and I am struggling." So you're doing the work, Paul, are you?

    20:27-20:30

With all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

    20:33-20:34

    I'm working, Christ is working.

    20:36-20:40

Second Peter, chapter one, verses three through five.

    20:41-22:53

"His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, so that through them you may become partakers nature. So Peter very clearly says that God is the one who has given us all things. You don't have to try to get something that pertains to life and godliness. God's already given it to you to the extent that we are people that are actually partakers of the divine nature. Then he turns around and says for this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith and then he gives a list. People tend to gravitate towards the extremes. Here's what I want to suggest to you this morning, not suggest, but just ask, "Can you be on board with me?" Can we be okay with the tension? Can we be okay with the tension? The New Testament commandments assume two things. They assume responsibility and they assume resources. Jot that down. When the New Testament gives us commands, those are the two things that are being assumed. That first of all, we can take responsibility to obey the commands. So there's a sense in which our will is involved, but the other thing it assumes is we have the resources to be able to obey the commands which we don't have in the flesh. You can't obey the commands of God in the flesh. You can't do it. You just can't. You need His power, His enabling, His Spirit living within you in order to carry out the responsibilities that He's put before you. And notice even here in Philippians 2, He says, "Work out your own salvation." He doesn't say, "Work at salvation." Like, "Keep at it, you'll get it.

    22:53-23:31

keep working at it. Don't have salvation yet, keep working at it. He doesn't say that. He doesn't say work for salvation. Oh you want to be saved? Let's get started and we'll see how you're doing in a year if you're ready to get saved or not. He's not saying that either. He's not saying work up your salvation. Like oh if I can just muster up enough faith I'll get saved. He's not saying that He's saying, "Work it out, work it out." Here's a couple of statements that help me.

    23:33-23:34

    Jot these down.

    23:36-23:42

The hunger in you is God at work in you.

    23:45-23:53

So you know that drive in you that you're like, "I wanna be obedient to Christ, "and I want to do what's right, "and I wanna honor God.

    23:53-23:57

"I wanna do the right thing." That is God at work in you.

    23:58-24:03

That is His Holy Spirit at work in you because that attitude doesn't exist in the flesh.

    24:03-24:06

Do you remember, Christians, do you remember when you lived in the flesh?

    24:06-24:07

    I do.

    24:07-24:16

I didn't give a rip about anything except what Jeff Miller wants, what's gonna make me happy, what's going to satisfy my lusts.

    24:20-24:23

But when I gave my life to Christ, Suddenly I had these new appetites.

    24:23-24:24

You know, I want to honor God.

    24:24-24:29

I want people to see Christ in me, and I want to speak in such a way that Christ is glorified.

    24:30-24:31

Where does all that come from?

    24:32-24:33

    That's God working in you.

    24:38-24:40

Here's another analogy that really helped me.

    24:42-24:42

    Maybe it'll help you.

    24:43-24:53

But somebody said, "You know, think of yourself as a mine." I'm being in western Pennsylvania, we know what a mine is, I don't have to explain that.

    24:54-25:02

But you're a mine, and God has deposited priceless resources in the mine.

    25:04-25:10

And our work, so to speak, is to mine out the things that God has already deposited within us.

    25:10-25:10

    Does that make sense?

    25:11-25:14

We are mining out what God has placed within.

    25:15-25:25

So when we talk here about working for Christ, we're not saying let's fulfill something in the flesh, we're saying Christ has put something in you, and what is that?

    25:25-25:26

    He's put himself in you.

    25:28-25:31

And our job in the Christian life is to mine that out.

    25:31-25:32

    That's the work.

    25:33-25:33

    Does that make sense?

    25:35-25:37

    What's God's part in this?

    25:37-25:39

I want you to jot down five words here.

    25:40-26:14

I know this is a lot, but in my defense, I asked you if you wanted to do Bible study and you said yes. All right? This is all from verse 13. I don't want anybody to misunderstand me, so I want you to... we're going to be thorough, all right? I could give you some cotton candy sermon and have you leave going, "Oh, that was sweet," but sermonettes make Christianettes, all right? The title of this message is "I Want to Be Real." So what's God's part in all this? You know, we're talking about I'm mining out.

    26:15-26:16

Well, it's all right in verse 13.

    26:16-26:18

First of all, number one, jot this down.

    26:20-26:21

God is the person at work.

    26:21-26:22

Your key word there is person.

    26:23-26:23

    These are all P words.

    26:24-26:26

God is the person at work.

    26:29-26:31

For it is God who works in you.

    26:32-26:35

Okay, God is the person at work, no one else.

    26:37-26:39

This is a work of God, and that should be very encouraging.

    26:40-26:44

Because what that means is sanctification can't be stopped.

    26:44-26:44

    It can't.

    26:47-26:52

Just as God is thorough in your justification, he will be thorough in your sanctification.

    26:52-26:57

He who began a good work in you, he's going to take it to the finish line.

    26:58-27:01

So understand that God is the person at work, no one else.

    27:03-27:05

We have a lot of wonderful Bible teachers.

    27:05-27:09

We think of John MacArthur and James MacDonald and even some local guys here.

    27:09-27:49

wonderful Bible teachers, who is it working you? It's God at working you. God is the person. Secondly, God provides the power. Your P word there is power. That's where it says, "For it is God who works in you." That word for works is the same Greek word where we get the word energize. What that means is God energizes the fulfillment of His own command. He energizes the fulfillment of His own command. So God provides the power. You can't do it in the flesh.

    27:52-28:56

Verse 13, "God works in you, for it is God who works in you." So the third P word is present. God is present. God is present. Do you realize that's the distinctiveness of Christianity? You look at all the other religions all over the world and you have this deity that we have to try to make happy because he's out there somewhere and he might be mad at us and we have to we have to try to make him happy? What can we do to make him happy? The Bible teaches that God isn't some detached deity out there that we need to try to appease because he's angry with us, but that God poured out his wrath on his son and that those who receive him, where does God live? He lives in here. God is present in here. You don't see that in any other religion. Where does your God live? Oh, he's out there somewhere.

    28:57-29:03

Christians, where does your God live? He lives here. God works in you. He's here.

    29:04-29:15

You get that? He's here. So God is present. Number four, God establishes the purpose.

    29:16-29:18

Your P word there is purpose.

    29:20-29:21

    And what's God's purpose?

    29:22-29:23

    Well, it's right here.

    29:23-29:30

Okay, for it is God who works in you both to, now here's two W words, to will and to work.

    29:34-29:36

    Two things God is after.

    29:37-29:37

    You know what God's after?

    29:37-29:39

Well, first of all, he's after your will.

    29:40-29:41

    He's after your will.

    29:42-29:45

What he's saying is he wants your will to line up with his.

    29:49-29:52

That's one of the ways you know that God is at work in you, understand that.

    29:52-29:53

How do I know God's at work in me?

    29:54-29:56

When your will lines up with his will.

    29:59-30:01

When you want the things that God wants.

    30:03-30:05

Like, man, I wanna be involved in ministry.

    30:05-30:07

I wanna be involved in reaching out to this community.

    30:07-30:08

    Where does that come from?

    30:10-30:15

That's God working in you, because that's what God wants.

    30:17-30:24

But to will and to work, not very much is getting done if it's just will, right?

    30:26-30:31

Yeah, we just all sat around here like, yeah, we wanna reach out to this community and we meet here next week.

    30:31-30:35

And yeah, we wanna reach out to the community and we're here in 2015.

    30:35-30:37

And we're like, yeah, we wanna reach out to this community.

    30:39-30:42

Yeah, do you think maybe we could get out there sometime and like get started?

    30:43-30:44

    Like that's what God's doing.

    30:44-30:51

He gets our will lined up with his and then he works through us, both to will and to work.

    30:53-30:55

One more P word, can you guess what it is?

    30:56-30:57

    The end of verse 13?

    31:01-31:03

    Pleasure, very good, pleasure.

    31:07-31:13

God receives pleasure at what he is doing through you.

    31:14-31:15

    Does anybody's brain hurt yet?

    31:16-31:16

    Because mine's starting to.

    31:18-31:23

God is doing this work in you and through you, and he's the one that is satisfied.

    31:23-31:26

That's literally what the word means, it's satisfaction.

    31:28-31:31

God causes us to do what satisfies him.

    31:34-31:39

That when God looks at the work that he's doing through you, He's not gonna be like, "Well, that was lame.

    31:41-31:50

I'm satisfied with the work that I'm doing through him or through her." Can't do it in the flesh.

    31:52-31:55

So the question is, what is God working in you to will and to do?

    31:58-32:01

What is God working in you to will and to do?

    32:01-32:03

Is there a habit that needs to stop?

    32:03-32:05

Is there an attitude that you need to stop?

    32:07-32:09

Or maybe for some it's an attitude you need to embrace.

    32:12-32:15

Maybe there's a relationship that needs to be healed.

    32:17-32:19

Or a relationship that needs to stop.

    32:21-32:25

Or as I said earlier, maybe there's a ministry that he's wanting to work through you.

    32:25-32:33

And see, even going through that list, at different points in that list, there are people that are sitting here going, "Yeah, that's me. Yeah, that's me." That's God working through you.

    32:34-32:36

bringing these things to your attention.

    32:40-32:44

So work, no hypocrisy in my faith.

    32:45-32:46

Can we be okay with the tension?

    32:47-32:48

Can you be okay with that?

    32:48-32:49

    I'm okay with that.

    32:50-32:54

I realize no good thing dwells in my flesh.

    32:54-33:01

I realized that apart from God, I was wayward and dead and lost.

    33:03-33:16

He put life into me and somehow He operates in me and through me in a way that goes with my will, goes with the choices that I make, that somehow I have responsibility, somehow I have resources.

    33:20-33:22

Can we be okay with attention?

    33:25-33:26

Can you be okay with that?

    33:53-34:30

Like "But Okay, I'm just trying to follow Christ. That's it. I'm trying to follow Christ I'm not a Calvinist or an Arminian You know pre millennial Dispensational covenant. I mean you I Seriously, I just that's fine for people to categorize their beliefs and things like that. I'm just telling you that's just not me That's just not I don't care. I don't care All I care about is trying to seek the Lord, trying to be real.

    34:31-34:33

So if you like the labels in that, great.

    34:36-34:41

If you wanna talk to me about it, it's probably going to be a short conversation because I don't know very much about it.

    34:41-34:42

    So I'll just listen.

    34:43-34:43

    All right?

    34:45-34:46

    So work.

    34:48-34:51

I have three more things and I promise they're gonna go much quicker.

    34:54-34:55

So no hypocrisy in my faith.

    34:56-34:57

    Number two, shine.

    34:58-34:58

    Shine.

    34:59-35:00

    No hypocrisy in my witness.

    35:05-35:06

    Look at verse 14.

    35:09-35:11

Paul continues with the imperatives here.

    35:11-35:46

He says, "Do all things without grumbling or questioning that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. So shine, no hypocrisy in my witness." So he says, "Do all things without grumbling or questioning." Grumbling. Actually, the The word in the Greek for grumbling is an onomatopoeia.

    35:46-35:46

Do you know what that is?

    35:48-35:51

That's a word that sounds like what it is, like zipper.

    35:53-36:00

A zipper is called a zipper because that's the sound it makes when you zip it.

    36:02-36:04

Well, this word in the Greek for grumbling is that.

    36:04-36:11

    It's just (mumbles) Grumbling.

    36:11-36:15

And this word for questioning literally means intellectual debate.

    36:18-36:34

So he says, "Do everything, without grumbling, without questioning, without turning everything into a debate." And then he talks about living in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.

    36:37-36:41

And actually the Greek word literally means twisted, bent out of shape.

    36:41-36:45

from the same word where we get scoliosis, bent out of shape.

    36:50-36:58

So notice he says, "Do everything without grumbling and questioning because you live in a crooked and twisted generation." Do you see the connection?

    36:58-36:59

    That's what they do.

    36:59-37:00

    That's what the world does.

    37:01-37:02

    The world grumbles in questions.

    37:03-37:04

    Did you notice that?

    37:05-37:07

    The world grumbles in questions.

    37:09-37:24

That's why he says, "Church, when you do things without grumbling and questioning, you are going to shine as lights in the world." Evangelism starts here.

    37:26-37:27

    Evangelism starts here.

    37:32-37:33

You know, Thanksgiving is Thursday, right?

    37:34-37:35

What is this Thursday, isn't it?

    37:39-37:42

And I've shared this with you before, but it's sort of ironic, isn't it?

    37:42-37:43

    What comes after Thanksgiving?

    37:45-37:45

    Like Christmas.

    37:45-37:47

Well, what comes like the day after Thanksgiving?

    37:49-37:49

    Black Friday.

    37:50-38:01

We have our one day a year where we give thanks and we sit around the table with our family and eat squirrel gravy if you're at my in-laws house.

    38:03-38:56

true. And then the next day we trample each other to buy toys so that our children can play with the box. But honestly we live in the most indulged and the most discontented society I would suggest to you in history. We have everything and we are satisfied with nothing. I read this interesting thing from this sociologist. I really think there's a lot of truth in this, but he's talking about how in our day you see a lot of smaller families. Now before you start thinking I'm throwing stones, we only have two kids ourselves, okay?

    38:56-38:58

    All right?

    38:59-39:03

So I'm not picking on you, but this is what the sociologist said.

    39:03-39:08

Many couples in our day are just having smaller families.

    39:12-39:19

And the danger with a smaller family is that can breed self-centeredness.

    39:21-39:21

    And here's why.

    39:25-39:32

When you're in a small family, the system, the family system sort of bends to the child.

    39:34-39:38

But when you're in a large family, the child sort of has to bend to the system.

    39:39-39:40

Let me give you an example.

    39:41-39:43

You have, let's say you have two children like we do.

    39:44-39:45

They get up out of bed.

    39:47-39:48

What do you want for breakfast?

    39:50-39:51

    I want Captain Crunch.

    39:52-39:52

    All right.

    39:53-39:54

    I want French toast.

    39:54-39:56

Okay, and you make it for both of them.

    39:57-40:00

And they, you know, they're getting ready to go to school, whatever.

    40:00-40:02

You know, what do you want packed for your lunch?

    40:02-40:05

You know, I want, you know, tuna.

    40:05-40:07

    I want, you know, jello.

    40:08-40:10

And you're customizing everything for them.

    40:11-40:19

Now, eventually after a while, they start to realize, everything sort of revolves around me, right?

    40:20-40:22

But what happens in larger families?

    40:23-40:25

    What happens in larger families?

    40:27-40:30

Breakfast is at 8.30 and here is what we are having.

    40:32-40:34

    Well, don't I get a choice?

    40:34-40:35

    Yeah, you have a choice.

    40:36-40:40

You can take it or what?

    40:40-40:40

    Tell me.

    40:41-40:42

    Leave it.

    40:43-40:44

    Those are your options.

    40:46-40:50

So you see in larger families, typically what's happened is the children learn to bend with the system.

    40:51-40:55

to say, you know, it's not, you know, what do you want for lunch, you know, for school?

    40:56-40:56

    It's here's your bag.

    40:58-41:03

So when you have lunchtime in the cafeteria at school, you also again have two options in front of you.

    41:05-41:09

You eat what's in the bag or you go hungry, right?

    41:10-41:11

So do you see the difference there?

    41:12-41:19

Well, the sociologist said, well, that's why children in our day seem to be coming more and more, be coming rather more and more self-centered.

    41:21-41:22

    And then they get old.

    41:26-41:35

You know, in the larger family setting where the child sort of bends to the system, moving out and getting a job looks like freedom.

    41:37-41:49

"Oh, you mean I'm going to be able to move out and make my own choices?" But instead what we see are children that parents are always catering to them.

    41:52-41:59

They see their freedom living with mom and dad, and they see moving out and having to get a job as being conformity.

    42:00-42:01

    Do you get that?

    42:02-42:11

We went from as a child living in conformity to the house to now as an adult I have freedom to, "Oh, I have freedom to do whatever I want as a kid.

    42:11-42:21

"Oh, now I'm gonna have to punch a time card "and make sure I dress right for work "and I only get so much time for breaks." And do you see the difference there?

    42:26-42:27

Why am I saying all this?

    42:32-42:37

Well, we have a generation that has not embraced responsibility.

    42:39-42:46

We have a generation where nothing is ever enough, and there's very little thankfulness.

    42:49-43:03

So instead what we have, a lot of 20, 30, 40 some year old people that never grew up, and they do all things grumbling and questioning.

    43:05-43:08

And they look exactly like the rest of the world.

    43:11-43:20

Church, I am persuaded of better things for you. Where Paul says, "Do all things without grumbling or questioning." Why?

    43:22-43:25

What's the big deal with complaining? Everybody complains, right?

    43:25-43:32

Everybody complains. Is that really a sin? I wish I had the time to do it, but I don't.

    43:33-43:40

    But read through Exodus 14, 15, 16, 17, then read through Numbers 11, 13.

    43:42-43:48

You see a pattern with the nation of Israel where God provides them, "Are you hungry?

    43:49-43:51

Okay, well, I'm bread out of nowhere.

    43:51-43:52

    How does that strike you?

    43:55-43:56

    Oh, we're thirsty.

    43:57-43:59

    Okay, water from a rock.

    44:01-44:08

else? God provided every single thing that they needed. And what did Israel do?

    44:09-44:35

They complained. "We have nothing to eat but this manna. We don't have anything to eat but this miraculous food that God provides almost every day except for the Sabbath. Nothing at all." God gave them perfection and they still, they still So what was God like? Did God just sort of like roll his eyes on all those kids?

    44:36-44:46

Can't make them happy. Actually, the Bible says there are different times in their complaining that God would wipe people out, kill them for their complaining.

    44:48-44:53

It's a very serious thing because when we complain, what we're saying is, "God, you didn't provide.

    44:54-45:08

You haven't given me enough. You haven't given me exactly what I wanted." It's disbelief. It's lack of trust. And it's sin. And God hates it.

    45:10-45:15

He hates complaining. Because you're questioning His sovereignty.

    45:19-45:23

You're questioning His goodness. You're questioning whether He loves you or not.

    45:31-45:33

So it's distrusting and believing God.

    45:35-45:37

So why does he mention this here?

    45:37-45:43

It seems kind of weird that he's talking about salvation and then all of a sudden he's talking about don't complain.

    45:46-46:07

As you're working out your salvation, or as God is working out your salvation, there are going to be some elements that God is going to sovereignly and supernaturally bring about and use to grow you, to conform you into the image of his son, and it's not a pleasant process sometimes.

    46:11-46:13

For example, how's God going to teach you how to pray?

    46:15-46:20

He's going to bring trials into your life, where you have no choice but to pray.

    46:20-46:21

    Do you know that?

    46:22-46:29

God's going to bring trials into your life where you have no choice but to fall on your face and cry out to Him.

    46:29-46:46

And God says, "I'm going to use this to teach you, to teach you how to pray." God's going to bring things into your life to teach your greater dependence upon Him, to teach you to trust Him, to teach you to go to His Word.

    46:47-46:56

But all of these things that God's trying to accomplish in you and through you, to conform you to the image of His Son, it's hard sometimes.

    46:58-47:06

So we can take the trials, we can take the hurting and the suffering, and we can complain about them.

    47:10-47:12

That would be a horrible mistake.

    47:12-47:16

Instead, do all things without grumbling or questioning.

    47:18-47:23

For you, first of all, because you're a child of God, act like it.

    47:26-47:27

Do you believe that God has your best in mind?

    47:27-47:29

Do you believe that God is sovereign?

    47:29-47:32

Do you believe that as his child, he is taking care of you?

    47:33-47:34

All right, then start acting like it.

    47:34-47:35

    That's what he's saying here.

    47:35-47:37

You know, you're a child of God.

    47:41-47:44

Blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish.

    47:44-47:46

But it's also for others, again your evangelism.

    47:49-47:56

Evangelism. When you gripe and complain and question, you look just like the world and you apparently have nothing to offer.

    47:57-48:12

But when the world sees that you have suffered, you have endured, You're standing under persecution, you're going through horrible trials, and you can come out of the other side of that saying, "You know what?

    48:12-48:20

I trust that God's doing something with this." The world notices that, and the result is you're shining in a dark place.

    48:23-48:24

You're shining in a dark place.

    48:27-48:29

So work and shine, thirdly, hold.

    48:31-48:41

Verse 16 says, "Holding fast to the word of life, that in the day of Christ, I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain." It says, "Finish line faith.

    48:42-48:56

Hold no hypocrisy in my endurance." Paul says, "Hold fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ," we talked about that already, that's glorification.

    48:56-49:00

Paul says, "I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

    49:01-49:09

How would you like to look back on your life, however old you are, just imagine, God grants you to live to be in your 80s.

    49:11-49:16

How would you like to be able to look back and say, I wasted my entire life?

    49:18-49:19

    It was all a waste.

    49:20-49:22

I thought I was doing big things, but I wasn't.

    49:23-49:24

    I wasted it.

    49:24-49:26

And see, that's what Paul is saying here.

    49:26-49:35

He says you need to hold on to the word of life because I know that someday I'm going to look back and know that it wasn't a waste.

    49:37-49:38

    So what about me?

    49:38-49:40

How can I evaluate my effectiveness?

    49:43-49:44

    There's a lot of ways.

    49:45-49:47

How many people do we have coming to the church?

    49:48-49:49

How many people visit the website?

    49:49-49:52

    Or how about this?

    49:52-49:53

How many people are devoted to me?

    49:56-49:59

How many people can I get devoted to James McDonald?

    49:59-50:08

You realize that none of those things are a proper evaluation of effectiveness.

    50:08-50:18

Here it is, at the end of the day, you are a group of people that are holding onto the word of God.

    50:21-50:26

You know, whether I could be killed in a car accident on the way home today, I know that.

    50:27-50:34

How effective would I have been if we had people sitting in this room going, "Well, you know, Jeff always says we've got to see what the Bible says.

    50:35-50:36

We've got to hold on to this.

    50:36-50:45

And we can't take man's word for it, we must take God's word for it." And that's what Paul is saying here.

    50:46-50:48

Hold fast to the word of life.

    50:49-50:51

That's how you know you did your job.

    50:51-50:59

Whether I'm here one more day or one more week or two more years or 60 more years, what is the legacy that I'm going to leave?

    51:00-51:11

It would be a church that says, "What does the Bible say? What does the Bible say? What does the Bible say?" If that's the kind of church we have, then I did my job. I did not run or labor in vain.

    51:13-51:45

One more. Rejoice. No hypocrisy in my zeal. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me. Rejoice. He It says, "Even if I'm to be poured out as a drink offering." You know what the drink offering is?

    51:46-51:51

In the Old Testament sacrifices, this was actually the last sacrifice.

    51:51-52:00

After the animals were sacrificed, they would actually take wine or oil or sometimes even honey, and it's poured out before God.

    52:03-52:07

And Paul pictured himself as being that sort of an offering.

    52:07-52:13

It was a picture of being spent for God, exhausting yourself for God.

    52:15-52:19

But notice he says, "Even if I'm to be poured out as a drink offering," what's this phrase?

    52:20-52:28

"Upon the sacrificial offering of your faith." What he's saying is his life was poured out to develop the faith of others.

    52:29-52:30

I'd like to close with this.

    52:30-52:36

You know, joy does not come from hoarding your life unto itself.

    52:41-53:41

So I want to challenge you if you're here this morning, you think, "You know what's going to make me happy is if I get what I want and I can do what I want and people leave me alone, give me my space, let me just be, live a quiet, insulated, isolated life, then I'll be happy." you won't. Let me tell you as sure as the Word of God, you will not. Joy, you will discover joy when you experience the Lord treating you as a drink offering, that you are pouring yourself out for other people. That's why once again we're talking about small groups. We have this small group sign up. Why are we doing this because we're about making disciples.

    53:41-53:44

We're about people pouring into other people.

    53:45-53:51

Like, well, I don't really know if I wanna open my home up or I don't know if I wanna go into somebody else's house.

    53:52-54:01

And joy comes from spending yourself on behalf of others.

    54:04-54:14

That's why Paul says, I want you to, verse 18, "Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me." God's doing some big things.

    54:19-54:21

So you should be glad and rejoice with me.

    Philippians chapter 2.

    00:06-00:19

You recall in chapter 1, as you're turning there, in chapter 1 the Apostle Paul writing to this church, says, "I am so thankful for you." Church at Philippi. He says he makes his prayers with joy.

    00:20-00:25

And you just really get the sense that the Apostle Paul loved this church. He loved this church.

    00:27-00:31

And then we saw that the gospel is not going to be stopped.

    00:32-00:36

Remember, Paul said, "You know what? Don't worry about my imprisonment.

    00:37-00:48

That's not going to stop the gospel." And I know there are a bunch of people out there preaching with false motives, but as long as Jesus Christ is being preached, the gospel is going forward, and I'm so thankful for that.

    00:52-00:57

And then we talked about living for Christ.

    00:58-00:59

What would you put in the blank?

    00:59-01:02

For me to live is, Paul says to live is Christ.

    01:04-01:06

    And to die is gain.

    01:07-01:11

And he was sort of torn, you know, should I depart and be with Christ?

    01:11-01:11

    That would be better.

    01:12-01:15

He goes, no, it's more necessary that I remain here for you.

    01:16-01:40

And then last week, again we're just reviewing here, but he said, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ." And literally what that means in the original language is this, "You're a citizen of heaven. Act like it." And that was the challenge last week.

    01:40-01:42

How do you think people are acting in heaven right now?

    01:43-01:44

How do you think they're acting in heaven?

    01:46-01:56

Paul's like, "That's how you're supposed to act on the earth." Because that is where your citizenship is, and he'll talk more about that, we'll see, as we go through Philippians.

    01:57-02:03

As we start chapter 2, I'd like to just start this message by just sharing my concerns for the church.

    02:06-02:25

And I suppose these could be said to be concerns for my church, or for the church, excuse me, for the church in general, across the board, looking at the church across the planet, that are even saying, "What about churches "in the Pittsburgh area?" But getting really specific, I wanna share with you my concerns for this church.

    02:28-02:29

    Don't push the panic button.

    02:30-02:34

These would be concerns that I would have for the church back before this church launched.

    02:34-02:40

And if by God's grace I'm here next year, these would still be my concerns for the church.

    02:41-02:43

And really it would boil down to three things.

    02:44-02:46

Three things that I'm really concerned about for the church.

    02:46-02:49

The first one would be lukewarmness.

    02:49-02:51

That would be a concern for me.

    02:52-03:02

When the church gets to the point like, ah, we're established, there's people here, we're paying the bills, time to make the donuts kind of mentality, lukewarmness.

    03:03-03:05

Let's not get too excited about the gospel now.

    03:07-03:08

    Well, that's a concern.

    03:11-03:22

Second concern I would have for this church, for all the churches, but this is the one that the Lord has put me in this position over, would be joyless religion.

    03:23-03:32

That the church sort of becomes, well, this is sort of the thing I do on Sunday and I show up and I get my check mark and God's happy with me as long as I get my check mark.

    03:32-03:37

    And that's a concern.

    03:37-03:40

I never wanna see that be the theme of the church.

    03:40-03:43

Let's just do our duty, get our check mark.

    03:45-03:50

We do what we do because God probably expects us and there's no joy in it.

    03:50-03:51

What are we going for this year?

    03:52-03:54

You know, joy, we're going for joy.

    03:56-03:58

And a third concern would be disunity.

    04:00-04:02

And that is exactly what we're talking about today.

    04:04-04:04

    But disunity.

    04:13-04:16

You're like, oh, that's why he wanted us all to sit in the middle.

    04:18-04:22

But even still, there's a part right down the middle.

    04:23-04:24

    You see that?

    04:25-04:27

    And I don't think it's intentional.

    04:27-04:33

I don't think anybody comes in here on a Sunday morning thinking, gosh, I hope nobody sits in my zip code.

    04:35-04:38

That's just how we are as a culture, right?

    04:38-04:46

I'm going to sit like way over here in this corner because I know that nobody sits anywhere near that area.

    04:46-04:48

I just kind of want to have my space.

    04:50-04:52

    That's a bit of a concern.

    04:53-04:56

We're going to be in heaven together for a long time.

    04:56-04:56

    Did you know that?

    05:01-05:04

But I'm not just talking about the proximity of our seating.

    05:07-05:09

I'm talking about unity in spirit.

    05:13-05:22

And I think that's a hurdle for this church, because we have people that are coming from very different places, from very different backgrounds.

    05:27-05:29

It's going to be a hurdle.

    05:32-05:33

We're going to talk about that today.

    05:34-05:38

You know, Paul in Philippians, what's the whole theme of Philippians?

    05:38-06:10

joy, right? Well, he devotes a whole chapter to the root problem that gets in the way of joy. Do you know what it is? The number one thing that gets in the way of joy. You're like, "Oh, I know what it is. It's persecution, right?" You're not right. You are in fact wrong. That's not it. It's got to be some kind of a hardship. It's got to be some kind I don't know.

    06:12-06:14

    Here's what leads to joylessness.

    06:14-06:15

    Write this down.

    06:15-06:17

    Selfishness leads to joylessness.

    06:19-06:20

We're going after joy this year.

    06:21-06:21

    That's our theme.

    06:22-06:22

    Not just this year.

    06:22-06:24

I hope it carries over to the next year at least.

    06:28-06:30

Paul's devoting a whole chapter to this.

    06:31-06:31

    Please don't miss this.

    06:32-06:33

    Selfishness leads to joylessness.

    06:34-06:35

That's the thing that leads to joylessness.

    06:36-06:40

So if you're sitting here today, Like, you know what, I haven't had a lot of joy in my life lately.

    06:40-06:41

    Do you know why?

    06:41-06:44

It's because you're being selfish in your life.

    06:45-06:53

There's some area of your life, or maybe many areas of your life, that selfish, it's about me, it's about me, it's about me.

    06:53-06:56

When your life is about you, you're not gonna have joy.

    06:56-06:58

    You're not, okay?

    06:59-07:00

    You're just not.

    07:02-07:03

So we're going to take a practice.

    07:06-07:10

I want you to say, "I am selfish." Are you ready?

    07:10-07:16

I'm gonna give you a little countdown, but I want you to say, no, I know what you're thinking, Colleen.

    07:16-07:21

You're gonna say, "Jeff is selfish." No, I am selfish.

    07:21-07:25

You're going to, Jeff knows that he's selfish.

    07:26-07:27

    I know that.

    07:30-07:31

    Are you ready?

    07:31-07:32

    I am selfish.

    07:32-07:35

One, two, three, let's hear it.

    07:35-07:36

    I am selfish.

    07:40-07:49

Correct. Because in the flesh, you're always going to gravitate towards selfishness.

    07:49-07:53

So let me hear it again. You ready? One, two, three.

    07:53-07:56

I am selfish. Try it again.

    07:56-07:58

    I am selfish.

    07:59-08:00

    Some of you aren't convinced.

    08:04-08:06

Well, first of all, it's a universal problem.

    08:08-08:14

If you're a human being, you wrestle with selfishness.

    08:17-08:18

    Where does it come from?

    08:18-08:21

Well, it comes back to really Genesis chapter three.

    08:22-08:26

'Cause jot this down, the root of all sin is selfishness.

    08:27-08:27

    Did you know that?

    08:27-08:32

The root of all sin is selfishness because think of what sin is.

    08:32-08:51

Sin is essentially saying, "I see what God said, "but I have reason to think that I'm going to benefit "by doing something different than what God said." That was the whole lie that got us into this mess.

    08:51-08:53

Remember Satan showed up to Eve?

    08:53-08:54

    Did God really say?

    08:55-08:56

    Did God really say?

    08:58-09:00

Casting doubt on the word of God.

    09:01-09:15

Well, God says, "Don't look at it, don't touch it, "don't think about it, or you'll die." And Satan's like, "You're not gonna die." God knows that when you eat off that tree, you will be, do you remember what Satan said?

    09:15-09:17

    You will be like God.

    09:18-09:23

Satan convinced Eve, and Adam was with her, by the way, God is holding out on you.

    09:25-09:26

    Can you believe that?

    09:26-09:27

God's holding out on you, man.

    09:28-09:30

    You think God's so great?

    09:32-09:35

Here's the thing, God's holding out on you.

    09:36-09:38

"Well, you mean there's something more for me?

    09:39-09:40

    You mean I could benefit?

    09:41-09:52

You mean there's something that I can have apart from what God's already provided?" And we haven't been the same.

    09:54-09:57

The root of all sin is selfishness.

    09:57-09:59

Pick any sin, any sin, pick one.

    10:00-10:05

At the root of the person committing that sin is selfishness.

    10:05-10:08

That's not what I want. I'm not going to do that.

    10:09-10:12

Or God saying to do something, no, I refuse.

    10:14-10:17

    It's selfishness. Still not convinced.

    10:19-10:22

Let me ask you this, what is your most common sin?

    10:23-10:24

    Or your besetting sin?

    10:25-10:29

You know, the Bible says we all like sheep have gone astray, each to his own way, right?

    10:29-10:34

Meaning your sin tendency and my sin tendency are going to be different.

    10:36-10:39

So what's your sin tendency? I want you to think about that for a second.

    10:44-10:47

The root of your sin tendency is selfishness.

    10:49-11:01

The reason you gravitate towards that sin is there's something in your flesh that has convinced you you that there's something that benefits you even though it's contrary to the word of God.

    11:02-11:26

I know God said I shouldn't do this, but I'll benefit from it. Me, me, me. I'll be better off if I do this or if I don't do that. Here's the thing with selfishness though, if you don't think you have a problem, that means you have the biggest one. Because selfishness is easy to recognize in others.

    11:26-11:27

    Did you know that?

    11:27-11:29

We are the master of that.

    11:31-11:35

We're like seal team six when it comes to spotting selfishness in others.

    11:36-11:37

Like, man, I can see where he's selfish.

    11:37-11:39

Well, I can really tell where she's selfish.

    11:40-11:42

We see it in other people in a heartbeat.

    11:45-11:47

The question is, can you see it in you?

    11:51-11:57

Speaking of the upcoming election, isn't this whole selfishness thing, isn't that really the argument on both sides?

    11:57-11:58

    Have you noticed that?

    11:59-12:07

One side says, well, these millionaires are doing these things for tax breaks to themselves, they're being selfish.

    12:08-12:20

Or the other side will say, well, they're trying to railroad political agendas that are ultimately going to cost us financially because they're being selfish for their agenda.

    12:20-12:27

Then again, I'm not making a political platform here, but can you at least acknowledge that both sides are accusing the other of being selfish?

    12:27-12:28

    Can you see that?

    12:28-12:29

    They're being selfish.

    12:32-12:34

We see it in others, we don't see it in ourselves.

    12:38-12:41

Married people, can you see it in your marriage?

    12:42-12:44

    The tendency towards selfishness?

    12:48-12:52

If you're not convinced that you're selfish, first step is get married.

    12:54-12:55

    You'll find out real quick.

    12:56-12:57

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, no, no, no, no, no.

    12:57-12:58

    I can't do that.

    12:58-13:00

That is my time for this.

    13:02-13:03

    You can't put that there.

    13:03-13:05

    That's my space.

    13:07-13:10

You can't buy that because that's what?

    13:11-13:11

    That's my money.

    13:14-13:16

My time, my money, mine, it's mine.

    13:16-13:17

    This is mine.

    13:18-13:19

    Selfishness.

    13:21-13:23

Selfishness says things like this, well, what's in it for me?

    13:24-13:25

    What's in it for me?

    13:27-13:33

Here's another thing selfishness says, all the times that you and I say things like, you know, I deserve, I deserve.

    13:34-13:35

I'm doing this because I deserve it.

    13:37-13:37

    Selfish.

    13:38-13:42

So if you're not convinced that you're selfish, first of all, read Genesis three, second of all, get married.

    13:43-13:48

If you're still not convinced that there's a selfishness problem, What's the next step?

    13:49-13:51

    Have kids, right?

    13:52-13:53

    Have kids.

    13:54-14:01

And you'll learn that there is a self-centered nature attached to the sinful core of our being.

    14:03-14:04

    Have kids.

    14:09-14:11

    Still not convinced?

    14:12-14:15

Show up at Walmart at 5 in the morning on Black Friday.

    14:17-14:32

Isn't it ironic in this country that we devote one day towards giving thanks and then the next day we act like idiots, trampling people?

    14:33-14:40

When I worked at Walmart while I was going to Bible college, literally two ladies got into a fist fight over Tickle Me Elmo.

    14:40-14:41

    I'm not kidding.

    14:42-14:50

fist fight, two ladies, pugilists, fist fighting over what?

    14:52-14:53

    (congregation laughing)

    14:55-14:57

That was great, we gave you another run at that.

    14:57-14:58

    Fist fighting over what?

    14:59-15:00

Oh, she can't do it again.

    15:03-15:05

That sounded nothing like Elmo, but that was really funny.

    15:07-15:07

    (laughing)

    15:08-15:09

I'm gonna go on Black Friday.

    15:13-15:13

    Aw.

    15:15-15:17

Well, now you all know what to get Laura for Christmas.

    15:20-15:22

But you see a real selfishness problem, don't you?

    15:23-15:25

You're like, well, I don't wanna wait till Black Friday.

    15:25-15:27

I'm still not convinced about the selfishness thing.

    15:27-15:29

    Okay, here's your assignment.

    15:29-15:32

After church, drive north on 79.

    15:33-15:40

And when you get towards Zillian Opal and they have the one lane closed, What happens there when you're on the road?

    15:41-15:43

    It's my wife's favorite thing.

    15:43-15:46

I'll tell you, when you're on the road with her and this happens, she giggles and giggles.

    15:46-15:52

But you know how like it tells you ahead of time, you know, right lane is closed, merge left.

    15:52-15:56

And sensible people, what do they do when they see that sign?

    15:57-15:58

    They merge left.

    15:59-16:00

What do the self-centered people do?

    16:01-16:06

They stay in that right lane until that blinking arrow and then insist on cutting in.

    16:08-16:15

And when that happens, my wife and I look at each other like, are we Christians with the attitude that we have towards those people right now?

    16:17-16:18

    That drives me insane.

    16:19-16:20

    Does that drive you insane?

    16:21-16:22

    Well, I'm sorry.

    16:22-16:23

    I'm sorry, Mr. President.

    16:23-16:25

I didn't realize you were on route 79 today.

    16:26-16:30

Here, let's stop traffic so you can cut in at the head of the line.

    16:32-16:33

    I'm gonna stop there.

    16:33-16:34

It's gonna be a long morning.

    16:35-16:35

    (congregation laughing)

    16:38-16:39

Yeah, but I'm really not selfish.

    16:39-16:41

I'm really not a selfish person.

    16:41-16:45

Let me ask you, how many people here have a problem with being late for appointments?

    16:48-16:48

    I do.

    16:50-16:51

    That's selfishness.

    16:51-16:53

Because do you know what you're communicating when you're late?

    16:54-16:57

You're communicating that my time's more important than your time.

    16:59-16:59

    Selfish.

    17:05-17:08

How about being in conversation with someone?

    17:08-17:15

Have you ever been talking to someone and then halfway through the conversation, you realize they're not listening, they're just waiting for you to take your breath so they can jump in?

    17:15-17:16

Have you ever had those conversations?

    17:17-17:20

Maybe that's, maybe you're that person, that selfishness.

    17:20-17:21

I really don't care what you have to say.

    17:22-17:23

You need to hear what I have to say.

    17:25-17:25

    Selfishness.

    17:29-17:31

Like, why are we talking about this?

    17:31-17:32

Well, we're talking about selfishness today.

    17:32-17:34

We're talking about selfishness in the church.

    17:35-17:36

    How does that manifest?

    17:37-17:38

    Here's the top two.

    17:38-17:40

We can talk on and on about this.

    17:40-17:41

    Here's the top two.

    17:41-17:42

    I don't like the music.

    17:43-17:43

    I don't like the music.

    17:43-17:45

That's one of the biggest complaints I hear.

    17:45-17:46

    I don't like the music.

    17:51-17:54

    Or here's the biggest indicator.

    17:56-18:11

When you visit a church, when you visit a church and the first thing you say when you walk in is, "What does this church do for me? My demographic." I'm a single mom. What does this church do for single moms? Selfish.

    18:12-18:18

You know, I'm a college-age student. What does this church do for college-age students? Selfish.

    18:19-18:27

Instead of coming in saying, "What's the mission of the church?" You know, how does this church go about fulfilling the Great Commission?

    18:27-18:31

It's... I'm not really... I'm interested in that, but we'll get to that later.

    18:31-18:33

The first thing I need to know is what can this church do for me?

    18:34-18:36

    That's selfish thinking. It is.

    18:40-18:41

    Are you selfish?

    18:43-18:51

You're like, "Okay, Pastor Jeff, we get it." Say, "We get it." So, are you interested in unity?

    18:52-18:57

Are you interested in seeing what the Bible says about unity, the cure for selfishness?

    18:57-18:57

    Are you interested?

    18:58-19:03

All right, say, "Bring it." Oh, come on, say it like, almost like you're taunting me.

    19:05-19:08

Come on, like you don't think I can back this up biblically.

    19:08-19:10

Say it like you're sticking your chest out.

    19:10-19:12

You can't prove unity in the Bible.

    19:12-19:13

"Bring it." Let me hear it.

    19:14-19:16

    Okay, that was much better.

    19:16-19:18

    Philippians 2, 1 through 4.

    19:20-19:50

says, "So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others is more significant than yourselves.

    19:51-19:58

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

    20:02-20:03

    So let's talk about unity.

    20:04-20:05

    Five, four, three, two, one.

    20:05-20:05

    Are you ready?

    20:06-20:08

    Letter A, what motivates unity?

    20:09-20:10

    Here's five questions to ask.

    20:11-20:13

    Five questions to ask.

    20:19-20:22

And in talking about unity, everybody look up here.

    20:23-20:30

It's tinted, I didn't have one that was clear, but this is full of paperclips, okay?

    20:32-20:38

And when we're talking about unity, there are really only two options that we have.

    20:39-20:42

Now let's pretend that these paperclips are like members of a congregation.

    20:44-20:47

At this point, what's keeping them unified?

    20:49-20:50

    The boxes, right?

    20:50-20:52

The box is keeping these unified, right?

    20:53-21:00

The box, this plastic box is the thing that is holding them together.

    21:01-21:09

So in that case, you could say there's an external force that's holding these together.

    21:09-21:14

There's something outside of themselves that's holding them together.

    21:15-21:18

But this thing's really cool because at the top, there's a magnet.

    21:19-21:26

Now, if you look at these ones, the thing that's holding these together is the magnet.

    21:27-21:32

So you could say that in this case, there's an internal force, right?

    21:33-21:37

It's by virtue of these paperclips being made out of metal.

    21:38-21:49

It's by virtue of what comprises these paperclips, the stuff that they're made of, we can say, that there's some internal force that's holding them together.

    21:50-21:51

    Are you with me?

    21:53-21:59

So my question is, God has designed the church to be unified in which way?

    22:01-22:07

That something external holds us together or something internal holds us together.

    22:08-22:12

But we're going to see in the text, something internal has to hold us together.

    22:12-22:13

And what is that internal thing?

    22:14-22:17

It's the Holy Spirit, you see.

    22:19-22:21

External would be something like this.

    22:22-22:25

The people that come to the church just like Pastor Jeff.

    22:27-22:31

Well, there's a problem with that because Pastor Jeff's not going to be here forever.

    22:32-22:34

Okay, Pastor Jeff's going to die someday, spoiler alert.

    22:37-22:41

So when I do, does that mean the church disbands?

    22:43-22:45

Because now we've lost the external thing?

    22:46-22:57

Or we can say, well, this church, what holds us together is we're all Penguins fans, or we're all into politics, or we're all into, those are externals.

    22:58-23:02

God has called the church to say, there's something that makes you up.

    23:04-23:05

    It's your very nature.

    23:06-23:09

that the magnet here sort of represents the Holy Spirit.

    23:09-23:12

It's the thing that is supposed to bind us together.

    23:12-23:13

    Does that make sense?

    23:14-23:19

My point in all this is God help us if we become a church that's held together by an external thing.

    23:22-23:24

The Holy Spirit needs to hold us together.

    23:26-23:29

So looking back, first of all, what motivates unity?

    23:29-23:30

    Five questions to ask.

    23:30-23:50

Notice he says, "So if there is," Now that word if literally means since you got that right or because he's not saying it's a conditional thing in the sense of, well, if you're one of those people like with the Holy Spirit, he's addressing believers.

    23:50-24:02

So he's saying since, since be like me saying, well, if you have a headache, go take an aspirin, since you have a headache, the remedy for that is an aspirin.

    24:04-24:09

But I'm sure you saw that the appeal is all related to the spiritual experience.

    24:11-24:15

Just breaking these down here, the questions, number one, have you been encouraged by Christ?

    24:17-24:19

Have you been encouraged by Christ?

    24:25-24:27

Let me ask you, have you been encouraged by Christ?

    24:27-24:36

Do you draw encouragement from the person of Jesus Christ?

    24:36-24:37

    Is that encouraging to you?

    24:37-24:40

Is it encouraging that Jesus Christ is God?

    24:41-24:44

And that He is sovereign over the entire universe?

    24:44-24:45

    Is that encouraging to you?

    24:47-24:52

Is that encouraging to know that nothing in our lives is ever like this cosmic mistake?

    24:53-24:54

    Is that encouraging to you?

    24:56-25:02

Is it encouraging for you to know that God never says, "Whoops." God never shows up a minute late.

    25:03-25:05

    God's arm is never shortened.

    25:05-25:06

    Is that encouraging?

    25:06-25:07

Do you draw encouragement from that?

    25:09-25:17

Is it encouraging to you to know that no matter what happens in this life, our best days are ahead of us eternally?

    25:18-25:20

    Is that encouraging to you?

    25:21-25:24

Is it encouraging to know that heaven has been purchased for you?

    25:26-25:29

Actually you've been purchased for heaven is a better way of saying it.

    25:30-25:31

    Is that encouraging to you?

    25:33-25:34

So have you been encouraged in Christ?

    25:35-25:41

Second question is, have you been comforted by Christ's love?

    25:43-25:45

Have you been comforted by Christ's love?

    25:46-25:47

It's all right there in the text.

    25:47-25:51

You see that if there's any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love.

    25:54-25:57

Now this word for comfort means to come closely alongside.

    26:00-26:03

That's what that means, to come closely alongside.

    26:06-26:08

You know, this is what it means.

    26:08-26:13

It's not, you know, "Ken Frederick, I love you." It's, this is what it means.

    26:13-26:15

It's coming up saying, "Hey, you know what?

    26:15-26:17

    This, I'm representing Christ now.

    26:18-26:19

I am never going to leave you.

    26:19-26:21

I am never going to forsake you.

    26:22-26:28

Ken, I am with you in the best times of your life, and I'm going to be with you in the worst times of your life.

    26:28-26:29

I'm right here with you, man.

    26:29-26:32

That's the word for encouragement, or I'm sorry, comfort here.

    26:32-26:34

    It's come alongside.

    26:36-26:39

Let me ask you, have you experienced Jesus Christ that way?

    26:39-26:40

    That's what he's saying here.

    26:40-26:42

Have you experienced Christ that way?

    26:44-26:48

that you've felt down and out, and you've known that he's the friend that sticks closer than a brother.

    26:48-26:49

    Have you experienced that?

    26:55-26:57

    Comfort by Christ's love.

    26:57-26:58

    He's come alongside.

    27:00-27:06

Whether it's been through a death or a job loss or a relational crisis.

    27:07-27:12

Have you experienced Christ's presence coming down that, you know, I'm with you.

    27:13-27:13

    I'm with you.

    27:13-27:13

    It's okay.

    27:16-27:18

Third, have you been walking in the Spirit?

    27:19-27:21

Have you been walking in the Spirit?

    27:21-27:23

He says participation in the Spirit.

    27:25-27:27

Literally it's fellowshipping in the Spirit.

    27:27-27:28

    It's the koinonia.

    27:32-27:35

So there again, have you been somebody who's been walking in the Spirit?

    27:36-27:41

You see in your life, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    27:42-27:53

You know, Galatians five, the fruit of the Spirit, you see the Holy Spirit is manifesting himself through you, but also in mind here is the participation with other believers.

    27:55-28:01

That I've been blessed because of the Holy Spirit's ministry to me through other people, you get that?

    28:03-28:13

Have you been somebody that you can say, you know, when I go to church, I've been blessed by the way the Holy Spirit not only is working in me, but the way the Holy Spirit is working to me through other people.

    28:15-28:22

The way the Holy Spirit works with our worship team and the way the Holy Spirit works to our children's ministry and the people that the Holy Spirit is using.

    28:28-28:33

So if you had this participation walking in the spirit, the koinonia, the fellowship.

    28:35-28:37

Fourthly, have you been blessed by the Spirit?

    28:38-28:48

Look at this last phrase, he says, any affection and sympathy, another way of saying this, have you experienced the Holy Spirit changing you from the inside out?

    28:51-28:58

Do you see that your love for people is growing, your love for ministry is growing, your compassion for the lost is growing?

    29:04-29:14

He says then, verse two, "Complete my joy." That gets us to the fifth question, do you care about your pastor?

    29:19-29:23

Paul says, what's about to come here, we'll complete his joy.

    29:23-29:23

    What does that mean?

    29:23-29:25

Well, this is a pastoral appeal.

    29:26-29:28

Understand that this is a pastoral appeal.

    29:28-29:35

You know, he's saying, church, Please understand how I mean this.

    29:35-29:37

    This is what he's saying.

    29:38-29:42

Have you benefited from the church?

    29:43-29:45

Have you benefited from God's Holy Spirit?

    29:45-29:47

Have you benefited from Jesus Christ?

    29:52-29:58

Because honestly, we're so used to take, take, take, take, take and never give.

    30:00-30:03

And this last thing, you know, do you care about your pastor?

    30:03-30:04

    This is the pastoral thing.

    30:05-30:12

If you're having a hard time wrapping your brain and your spirit around all these things that I'm saying, let me ask you, can you do something for me?

    30:13-30:14

Can you do this for me?

    30:17-30:18

    What do you need?

    30:20-30:26

Well, he says, "By," and then he gives a list of descriptions of what unity looks like.

    30:27-30:28

    So what motivates unity?

    30:29-30:30

Those are the five questions to ask.

    30:30-30:34

Before we get to what does it look like, I want you to see what Paul's doing here.

    30:34-30:37

He's appealing as a parent would do a child.

    30:40-30:45

But, you know, parents, you can appeal to your children in two different ways, right?

    30:48-30:49

    One way is the threat.

    30:51-30:55

If you don't, I'm going to lay the smack down.

    30:57-30:58

    That's an appeal, right, parents?

    30:58-30:59

Is that an appeal you can give to your kids?

    31:00-31:03

    If you don't, kapow.

    31:07-31:13

Or another appeal that you can give to your kids is sort of the appeal that Paul's giving here.

    31:13-31:29

Imagine a parent sitting down with a child saying, you know, son, haven't your mother and I, haven't we always tried to encourage you and everything that you've done.

    31:30-31:44

And son, remember all the times that, whether you were upset about something at school, or you were hurting, or you were confused, haven't your mother and I always tried to bless you and comfort you during those times?

    31:44-31:46

Haven't we always tried to do that?

    31:49-31:58

Son, haven't you been blessed being part of our house that we've provided for you, and we've always done our best to make sure that you had the things that you need.

    32:00-32:02

That's why we want you to be a loving part of this family.

    32:02-32:03

    Do you see that appeal?

    32:04-32:05

That's sort of what Paul's doing here.

    32:08-32:14

He's appealing as a parent to a child, like haven't you benefited from being part of this family?

    32:15-32:20

Well, then I need you to step up in love for this family.

    32:22-32:23

    Do you get that?

    32:24-32:25

    That's the appeal.

    32:27-32:32

So he's assuming some, you know, certain things are true just because these are people that are walking with Christ.

    32:33-32:35

So letter B, what does unity look like?

    32:35-32:36

    Four marks to examine.

    32:37-32:39

So these are five questions to ask.

    32:41-32:44

If you've answered yes to any of these questions, we're moving on here.

    32:44-32:45

    What does unity look like?

    32:45-32:46

    Four marks to examine.

    32:51-32:54

First of all, he says, complete my joy, number one, of being of the same mind.

    32:55-32:56

    Write down same mind.

    32:56-32:57

    It's a recurring theme.

    32:57-32:59

We saw it in chapter one, verse 27.

    33:03-33:09

Same mind, it's thinking alike, true.

    33:10-33:12

And God's word certainly would determine the standard.

    33:12-33:16

But understand when he talks about the same mind, it's more than just thinking alike.

    33:16-33:18

Write this word down, it's attitude.

    33:20-33:21

    It's attitude.

    33:24-33:26

This is what he's talking about here.

    33:27-33:29

He's like, you know what guys, this will complete my joy.

    33:29-33:31

You guys all need to have the same attitude.

    33:36-33:39

Now I've been in pastoral ministry, now I've told you this before, 15 years.

    33:39-33:40

Why do I tell you that?

    33:40-33:42

Not like I get a yogi button for that or anything.

    33:43-33:45

But just to say I've been around the block a couple of times, okay?

    33:46-33:48

    And I've seen church conflict.

    33:51-33:59

They're extremely rare that there's conflict in the church over theology.

    34:00-34:01

    Honestly, it's rare.

    34:02-34:12

I can probably count on one hand the number of times that there's been some sort of a conflict upheaval over the way we interpret a particular passage of Scripture.

    34:13-34:14

    Very rare.

    34:16-34:19

I would say that probably comprises 1% or less.

    34:19-34:23

What makes up the 99% is attitude.

    34:26-34:29

That's the problem, when somebody's attitude gets sideways.

    34:32-34:36

And this is biblical, 1 Corinthians 3, 3, listen to what Paul says here.

    34:36-34:54

"For while there is jealousy and strife among you, "are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?" See, he's saying disunity is always spirit versus flesh type thinking, never spirit versus spirit type thinking.

    34:57-34:59

So he's saying to have a common attitude.

    35:01-35:02

    Have a common attitude.

    35:04-35:06

    Secondly, he says same love.

    35:07-35:08

    Same love.

    35:08-35:12

He says being of the same mind, having the same love.

    35:12-35:13

    What does that mean?

    35:14-35:38

this, "Love for all of God's people equally." That's what that means. It means you love everybody equally. Same love. And it's true, there are friendships, there are, you know, just by virtue of whether it's ministry or past relationships, that there are different friendships in the church, that's true. But same love means you love everybody equally.

    35:41-36:54

his same soul. He says, "Being in full accord." Actually, this could literally be translated one-souled, S-O-U-L-E-D. Like, I think Paul made that word up. I don't know if that word's anywhere else in the Bible. He's like, "You need to have one soul." And here he's referring to passion. So, first, do you have the same attitude, church? You're coming here with attitude? Do you love everybody equally? And next question, you have the same passion. Do you have the same passion? Then fourthly, what's the fourth thing? He says, "and of one mind." Like, oh that's same mind. No, really this means minding one thing or on your outline write down same purpose. You have the same passion and you have the same purpose. You're like, okay I kind of get that. What's that mean?

    36:54-36:59

Here's what that means. Do you know what the vision is for Harvest Bible Chapel?

    36:59-37:20

Do you know? Do you know what our vision is here? Well let's do a quick review. Do know this you're out. There's the door back there. There's one there and one back there. I'm just kidding. You don't have to leave, but you have to learn it.

    37:20-37:42

What's the mission? To glorify God, right? Through the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment. All right, how many of you You're like, "Oh yeah, I knew that." A couple of you, "Great, great." That's the mission of the church.

    37:42-37:43

Why is that the mission of the church?

    37:45-37:46

Anybody wanna take a swing at that?

    37:46-37:47

    Why is that our mission?

    37:49-37:50

Yeah, because Jesus commanded that, right?

    37:51-37:52

    Well, what should we do?

    37:52-37:53

    What should we do?

    37:53-37:55

I got an idea, let's do what Jesus said to do.

    37:56-37:59

Jesus said to go make disciples and that's the mission of the church.

    38:02-38:04

You're like, "Well, a lot of churches "do that very differently.

    38:04-38:05

"How does this church do it?

    38:05-38:09

"How does Harvest Bible Chapel do it?" Well, this is the vision for the church.

    38:09-38:19

And understand this, because when we're talking about unity, what I'm asking you now is are you on board with this vision?

    38:22-38:25

The way it works in Harvest Bible Chapel is this.

    38:25-38:29

You should be bringing people to church that you know that need the Lord.

    38:30-38:32

    Okay, we're not sheep stealing.

    38:32-38:33

    We're just offering green grass.

    38:34-38:38

but you need to look for people that you know that need to know the Lord.

    38:39-38:41

And you bring them to church with you.

    38:42-38:51

And here, as people experience worship, which can lead an unbeliever to faith, by the way, what's that, 1 Corinthians 11?

    38:52-38:54

Don't think that that's not an evangelistic thing.

    38:54-38:59

People being in the presence of true worship, God is really among these people.

    39:00-39:01

    God uses that.

    39:02-39:12

So you bring your friends, your family, your coworkers, people you know that need to hear the Lord, to know the Lord, you bring them to church.

    39:14-39:21

And then while we're here, we do things like, we have party with the pastor to try to let people know here's what kind of church we are up front, okay?

    39:21-39:23

No bait and switch, here's what we are.

    39:23-39:25

We're glad that you're here, we want you to be a part.

    39:25-39:31

And then we do the two week membership class where we share the gospel and we talk about what is a disciple of Jesus Christ?

    39:31-39:32

    What's a disciple?

    39:33-39:34

By the way, what's a disciple?

    39:34-39:42

Someone who worships Christ and walks with Christ and works for Christ, right.

    39:45-39:50

And then we encourage everybody to be a part of a small group, why?

    39:54-39:58

Because if our mission is to make disciples, how does that happen?

    39:58-40:00

    That happens in small groups.

    40:00-40:02

That's why you hear us saying You gotta join a small group, join a small group.

    40:03-40:05

    That's where discipleship happens.

    40:06-40:14

That's where you're pouring into people's lives and other people are pouring into you and you're meeting together and getting in the Word together and getting in prayer together.

    40:15-40:16

    That happens in small group.

    40:20-40:23

What else do we have for the vision of Harvest Bible Chapel?

    40:23-40:25

You're gonna be hearing more about this.

    40:25-40:28

Every small group doing an outreach together.

    40:29-40:35

Okay, so the small group that you're in, you should be involved in some sort of outreach ministry together.

    40:35-40:57

We're gonna talk about that with all of the small group leaders and hosts, but you should have a plan, whether it's, well, you know, our small group is gonna work at the soup kitchen, or we're gonna be part of Urban Impact, or we're going to hand out tracks at the hockey game if they ever have hockey again, or, you know, this is what our small group does to do outreach ministry.

    40:59-41:08

And Dan Thompson right now is working with getting some things ready for some overseas missions with some Harvest Bible chapels in Nicaragua.

    41:13-41:15

So do you understand the vision of the church?

    41:18-41:19

    Do you understand that?

    41:20-41:24

How many people think, okay, I understand where you're going with this, Pastor Jeff, do I have to do it again?

    41:25-41:26

    How many people understand this?

    41:27-41:40

Okay, you come to church, you bring your friends and family, you know, we share the gospel, we minister to them, involved in small groups where discipleship happens and where outreach happens.

    41:41-41:45

That's where the local outreach happens and then the international thing, Dan Thompson's working on that.

    41:48-41:50

So here's where I'm going with this.

    41:50-41:51

That's the vision of the church.

    41:56-41:57

But you need to know that up front.

    41:58-42:03

Because what we're calling for you, this is are you on board with the vision of the church?

    42:04-42:07

Okay, you understand it, are you on board with that?

    42:08-42:09

Like, yeah, I'm not really into small groups.

    42:11-42:12

Then you're probably in the wrong church.

    42:13-42:14

    You understand that?

    42:15-42:17

Because that's part of our vision.

    42:19-42:20

Like, yeah, I'm not really into outreach.

    42:23-42:26

Then you're probably in the wrong church because that's part of our vision.

    42:28-42:30

    Like your music's too contemporary.

    42:31-42:36

You're probably in the wrong church because this is what we're about.

    42:37-42:40

And you see, this was the appeal that the apostle Paul was making to the Philippian church.

    42:41-42:43

And this is the appeal that I'm making to you.

    42:44-42:50

And if my closeness in proximity, though it's just a little bit, helps add to the urgency.

    42:51-42:57

What I'm just sharing with you is my heart to say, I want you on board with this vision.

    42:57-43:09

You have to know what it is, and you have to subscribe to it to say, I understand if this is a church about making disciples, this is my part in making disciples.

    43:11-43:11

    Are you with me?

    43:13-43:15

You're not going to stick around if you don't have this mindset.

    43:17-43:35

This might be your last Sunday, or you might stick around for a couple of months, but if you're not interested in discipleship and evangelism and passionate worship and passionate crying out to God in prayer, you might do better at another church because that's what we're going after here.

    43:39-43:42

Like I'm so with you, Pastor Jeff, at least I hope that's what you're saying.

    43:43-43:46

So letter C, how do I promote unity?

    43:48-43:51

So we have five questions to ask, and you answered yes to all those.

    43:52-43:55

Four marks to examine, and I hope that you're looking at that in your life.

    43:55-44:01

You know, do I have the same attitude, the same love for people, but the same passion and purpose?

    44:03-44:04

So how do I promote unity?

    44:04-44:06

Well, here are three statements to practice.

    44:07-44:08

    Look at verse three.

    44:11-44:16

Do nothing from rivalry or conceit.

    44:16-44:17

    Conceit.

    44:20-44:25

So number one, I am not going to promote myself.

    44:29-44:31

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:32-44:34

This is the first thing you need to practice saying.

    44:34-44:34

    So you ready?

    44:36-44:37

    One, two, three.

    44:37-44:40

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:40-44:42

Okay, that was good right out of the gate.

    44:42-44:42

    Let's try it again.

    44:43-44:43

    One, two, three.

    44:44-44:46

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:46-44:47

    We're practicing this, okay?

    44:47-44:49

Let's do it again, one, two, three.

    44:49-44:51

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:52-44:52

    Let's try it again.

    44:53-44:55

I am not going to promote myself.

    44:55-44:56

No countdown, we're just going into it.

    44:56-44:57

    You ready?

    44:57-44:59

I am not going to promote myself.

    45:00-45:01

Come on, we're gonna say it with conviction.

    45:02-45:04

I am not going to promote myself.

    45:06-45:07

    Keep practicing that.

    45:07-45:08

Did you see it in the text?

    45:10-45:13

Actually, in the Greek, there's no verb.

    45:13-45:18

You know, there's no word "do." You know what Paul's saying?

    45:18-45:25

You know, literally from the Greek, he's saying, "Nothing from rivalry or conceit." That's what he's saying.

    45:25-45:28

"Nothing, nothing from rivalry or conceit.

    45:31-45:33

I am not going to promote myself." Well, what's rivalry?

    45:34-45:37

That's the desire to promote yourself.

    45:39-45:43

It's winning by destroying someone else.

    45:43-45:49

rivalry, winning by destroying someone else. Last political statement of the day.

    45:49-46:34

Isn't that political ads? Every political ad, right? I've said this to Aaron so many times and I've had conversations with some of you others. I would rather have a candidate say, "Hi, my name is Jeff Miller and here's what I stand for." Boom boom boom boom boom. That's why you should vote for me. How many of those ads do you see? Seriously, how many of those ads do you see? Abby says one. Yeah, I think I saw one. I think we saw the same one, Abby. Let me ask you another question. How many ads are "don't vote for this guy because..." and then they always have the most unflattering picture of the guy, you know what I'm talking about?

    46:34-46:36

They get this picture where he's like...

    46:37-46:37

    (congregation laughing)

    46:39-46:40

    (man speaking indistinctly)

    46:42-46:43

How many of those do you see?

    46:44-46:46

Like all of them but the one, right?

    46:48-46:50

That's what he's talking about rivalry.

    46:50-46:56

We have a tendency to make ourselves look good by tearing someone else down.

    46:57-46:59

I was talking to Mark Bloomingdale about this.

    46:59-47:03

I'm like, "Why do they do that?" And Mark's answer is, "You know why they do that?

    47:04-47:34

because it works. And he's right. They're not dummies. They do that because it works, but I'm not saying it's right, because actually the Bible says it's wrong. Paul says, "Nothing from rivalry." I'm not going to tear other people down to make myself look better. Then he says, "Nothing from conceit." What's conceit? Well, that's empty glory, that's having a high opinion of yourself.

    47:35-47:39

Those are all the things that I do to let people know how much I rule.

    47:40-47:41

    God help us.

    47:43-47:47

All my little statements about I did this and I accomplished this and look at what I did.

    47:50-47:58

So how much should we be motivated by rivalry or conceit?

    47:58-47:59

    Well, he says nothing.

    48:00-48:02

I did an extensive study on this Greek word.

    48:02-48:03

Do you know what it means?

    48:04-48:05

    It means nothing.

    48:07-48:08

    It means nothing.

    48:09-48:14

Not like try not to do too many things, nothing.

    48:16-48:18

Get a great quote from C.S. Lewis.

    48:18-48:19

    Listen to this.

    48:20-48:32

He says, "We must not think that pride is something that God forbids because he's offended at it, or that humility is something he demands as do his own dignity, as if God himself were proud.

    48:33-48:41

The point is, he wants you to know him, wants to give you himself.

    48:44-49:08

And he and you are two things of such a kind that if you really get into any touch with him at all, you will in fact be humble, delightedly humble, feeling the infinite relief of having for once got rid of all the silly nonsense about your own dignity, which has made you restless and happy all your life.

    49:09-49:14

He says, "I wish I'd gotten a bit further with humility.

    49:16-49:39

If I had, I could probably tell you more about the relief and the comfort of taking off the fancy dress, getting rid of the false self with all its, "Look at me, and aren't I a good boy?" While it's posing and posturing to get near it, selflessness, to get near it, even for a moment, it's like a cold drink of cold water to a man in the desert.

    49:40-49:51

"And how much of my misery comes from my reputation "and my position and my thoughts about me?" It's a great quote.

    49:54-49:56

So understand, I am not going to promote myself.

    49:57-49:57

    Go ahead and say it.

    50:02-50:05

You sounded a lot more convinced actually before the sermon.

    50:07-50:08

    Maybe I should stop now.

    50:11-50:14

This is an act of faith, understand that.

    50:15-50:16

This is an act of faith.

    50:19-50:22

The Bible says, if you exalt yourself, you will be what?

    50:23-50:23

    Humbled.

    50:25-50:28

And if you humble yourself, you will be exalted.

    50:29-50:30

    Do you believe that?

    50:32-50:40

This is an act of faith because selfishness says, selfishness says this, if I'm not selfish, I'm going to lose something, right?

    50:40-50:41

    Isn't that what selfishness says?

    50:42-50:48

If I'm not selfish, if I'm not looking after my interests, nobody else is and I'm gonna miss out.

    50:50-50:51

    That's what selfishness says.

    50:54-51:01

You're like, "Well, if I'm not looking out for myself, who is?" And what's the answer, church?

    51:02-51:04

The answer is everybody else, right?

    51:05-51:05

    Ultimately God.

    51:06-51:10

But in the church, we're going to get to that part.

    51:12-51:14

But let's just start with this.

    51:14-51:15

I am not going to promote myself.

    51:16-51:18

    Try it again with conviction.

    51:18-51:18

    Go.

    51:20-51:21

    (congregation chattering)

    51:21-51:25

I'm gonna hold you to that because I just heard you say that like 12 times.

    51:27-51:28

Okay, here's something else to practice.

    51:28-51:29

    You ready?

    51:32-51:33

You are more important than me.

    51:39-51:40

    Let's try that.

    51:42-51:43

    You ready?

    51:44-51:48

I'm gonna model it for you and then I'm going to give you the chance.

    51:48-51:49

    you're practicing this.

    51:51-51:52

You are more important than me.

    51:54-51:55

    Now it's your turn.

    51:56-51:57

    One, two, three, go.

    51:58-52:00

You are more important than me.

    52:00-52:01

    Let's try it again.

    52:01-52:02

    Go.

    52:02-52:04

You are more important than me.

    52:05-52:07

Try it again, but like you're really convinced of it.

    52:07-52:07

    Go.

    52:08-52:11

You are more important than me.

    52:13-52:14

    Do you believe that?

    52:16-52:18

    See, the answer is humility.

    52:19-52:32

Paul says again, "But in humility, "count others more significant than yourselves." You better have that highlighted in your Bible because I'm going to check when you leave today.

    52:33-52:35

And if it is not highlighted, I will highlight it for you.

    52:36-52:37

    Underlining is acceptable, Ken.

    52:39-52:44

"In humility, count others more significant than yourselves." What's humility?

    52:44-52:46

Okay, get this on the table.

    52:46-52:49

Humility is not thinking badly of yourself.

    52:50-53:01

I'm a loser, I stink, nobody likes me, nobody should like me, I'm just nothing but a piece of dirt.

    53:03-53:05

    That's not humility.

    53:05-53:06

    You know what that is?

    53:08-53:09

    That's actually pride.

    53:11-53:16

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, humility is not thinking of yourself at all.

    53:17-53:17

    You get that?

    53:18-53:36

Because when you're obsessed with, I stink, I'm a loser, I'm nothing, I'm the most least important person, when you're stuck in that mindset, it's an over-preoccupation with yourself, which is not humility.

    53:38-53:40

It's not thinking less of self.

    53:40-53:42

It's not thinking of self at all.

    53:46-53:52

So I want you to turn to the person beside you and I want you to say, "You are more important than me." Go.

    53:57-54:01

I know we're creating a lot of problems in some households because we have a lot of husbands and wives sitting together.

    54:03-54:13

If that's the case, I want you, husbands, I want you to take your wife's hand and I want you to look in each other's eyes and you're both going to say it.

    54:13-54:13

    You ready? Go.

    54:18-54:20

I got nothing to do till four o'clock.

    54:23-54:25

You guys better have this down before Steelers come on.

    54:26-54:28

You are more important than me.

    54:28-54:29

    Come on, say it.

    54:32-54:32

    Okay.

    54:35-54:38

You're like, Jeff, why are you so like adamant about this?

    54:38-54:40

Because it's in the Bible, man, that's why.

    54:40-54:46

And because we get all sideways because we walk in the church thinking, "This place couldn't run without me.

    54:47-54:49

I'm the most important person in this church.

    54:49-55:00

That church is gonna suffer when I take my ball and go to the church down the street because nobody's more important in this church than I am." Wrong.

    55:02-55:17

That's working against unity because Paul says in humility, "Count others more significant than yourselves." Honestly, honestly, I'm probably the most expendable person in this church.

    55:18-55:20

Like, well, you're the pastor, isn't that the most important?

    55:20-55:22

Actually, no, because you know what?

    55:22-55:36

If I keel over this afternoon, it would just be a matter of calling the fellowship and there'd be some other guy that James McDonald trained that's prayed up and ready to go and he'd be up here Sunday chasing the same thing that we're chasing here together, all right?

    55:37-55:46

But get the idea out of your head that you're so important all about you, instead we look around and say, you're more important than me.

    55:48-55:49

    You're more important than me.

    55:51-55:52

I have a hard time with that.

    55:55-55:56

How do I get into that mindset?

    55:56-55:58

I wanna just think about this.

    56:00-56:03

You don't know what's in another person's heart, do you?

    56:05-56:15

But you know, you know the history of what's in another's one heart and whose is that?

    56:17-56:17

    It's yours, right?

    56:18-56:20

So with that in mind, let me ask you a question.

    56:21-56:23

Who was the worst sinner that you've ever met?

    56:26-56:29

There's really only one answer to that question, isn't there?

    56:31-56:32

    I don't know what's in your heart.

    56:34-56:37

The only thing I know is looking back in my life to say I know what's been in my heart.

    56:39-56:44

So the only heart that I have the inside scoop on that I have full disclosure on is mine.

    56:45-56:53

So my assumption is, I probably have the worst track record of anybody in this room.

    56:54-56:57

And if you're honest with yourself, you'll have a similar attitude.

    57:01-57:06

So it's easy with that attitude to look around and say, yeah, these people are more important than me.

    57:09-57:15

I was just a horrible sinner saved by grace, but they're more important than me.

    57:17-57:18

    Okay, one more thing.

    57:18-57:18

    Can you handle it?

    57:20-57:21

    So much to memorize.

    57:23-57:24

    Look at the last thing.

    57:27-57:30

Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also to the interest of others.

    57:31-57:33

So the last question is, what can I do for you?

    57:36-57:45

Remember I told you before, It's always an indicator when somebody comes into the church and says, "What can this church do for me?" In Philippians 2, 4, what does Paul say?

    57:45-57:56

You don't just walk in with that attitude. You walk in and say, "What can I do for you? What can I do for you?" And that's my prayer as we're moving forward with, you know, shouldering the weekly kingdom responsibility.

    57:57-58:04

And we have a lot of areas where we need people to step up and work as this ministry grows and moves forward.

    58:05-58:10

We need people to step up and say, "What can I do for you?" What can I do for you?

    58:10-58:12

So are you ready to give that a swing?

    58:14-58:15

    It goes like this.

    58:16-58:17

I'll model it and then we'll give you a try.

    58:20-58:21

What can I do for you?

    58:23-58:24

    All right, you got that?

    58:26-58:27

    Three, two, one, go.

    58:28-58:29

What can I do for you?

    58:30-58:31

All right, let's try it again.

    58:31-58:31

    Three, two, one.

    58:32-58:33

What can I do for you?

    58:34-58:35

    Don't need a countdown, go.

    58:37-58:38

    I'm so glad you asked.

    58:44-58:46

Set yourself aside and give yourself for others.

    58:49-58:53

This isn't just a matter of what's right and wrong, of what's good, better, and best.

    58:56-58:58

God says you will actually benefit from this.

    59:00-59:06

So five questions to ask, four marks to examine, three statements to practice, two choices.

    59:07-59:08

These aren't on your outline, John, down at the bottom.

    59:09-59:10

    Two choices.

    59:10-59:15

What happened was I had the outline done, I thought, oh, I had a countdown thing going, I didn't even realize it.

    59:16-59:18

So we gotta have a two and a one, right?

    59:18-59:19

    Two choices.

    59:21-59:34

Two choices, you can leave here today insisting on I should get my own way in life, I deserve to get my own way in life, People should cater to me.

    59:35-59:37

    Everything still revolves around me.

    59:38-59:39

That's one choice that you have.

    59:39-59:46

You can leave thinking that you're all that in a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos.

    59:51-01:00:00

Or your other choice is to say, you know, the Bible says that I was bought with a price.

    01:00:00-01:00:02

    I am not my own.

    01:00:04-01:00:09

You know, the Bible says to be a disciple, we're talking about disciples here, right?

    01:00:11-01:00:15

Jesus said, "If anyone would be my disciple," what was step one?

    01:00:15-01:00:15

    You remember?

    01:00:16-01:00:18

"Let him," do you remember step one?

    01:00:19-01:00:27

"If anyone would be my disciple, let him," if you know it, shout it out, "deny himself." That's step one.

    01:00:28-01:00:28

    Why?

    01:00:29-01:00:33

Because as long as you're in your own way, you're not going to come to Christ.

    01:00:34-01:00:35

    It's giving up.

    01:00:36-01:00:39

And that's what we talked about this baptism service.

    01:00:39-01:00:40

That's the whole picture of baptism.

    01:00:43-01:00:44

    The whole picture of baptism.

    01:00:44-01:00:50

When you go underwater, I remember Ken, you were baptized, you know, our last service at Northway.

    01:00:50-01:00:52

When you go underwater, do you know what you're saying?

    01:00:52-01:00:53

    Ken's dead.

    01:00:55-01:00:56

    That's what you're saying.

    01:00:56-01:01:24

dead. I'm identifying with the death of Jesus Christ. My old man has been crucified with Christ. And when you come up out of the water, what you're saying is, "Christ is alive in me. My life is Christ." That's the whole picture of baptism. I'm no longer, I'm not even on my own radar anymore. My life is Christ.

    01:01:26-01:01:27

    So these are my choices.

    01:01:27-01:01:33

I can promote myself, and ultimately I'm going to be miserable.

    01:01:36-01:01:37

Because here's what you're going to find.

    01:01:41-01:01:43

    You are not interesting enough.

    01:01:44-01:01:46

    You are not captivating enough.

    01:01:47-01:02:01

You are not exciting enough to maintain any level of enthusiasm for promoting yourself for any long period of time, you're going to make yourself miserable.

    01:02:05-01:02:07

    Go ahead and promote yourself.

    01:02:08-01:02:10

Make your life all about yourself and you will be miserable.

    01:02:13-01:02:20

Your other option is you can spend yourself for others and you can experience joy.

    01:02:21-01:02:22

    Those are your choices.

    01:02:26-01:02:29

    One example, finally one example.

    01:02:30-01:02:37

So who's the ultimate example in pouring myself out for the benefit of others?

    01:02:37-01:02:44

Who's the ultimate example of I'm going to humble myself for the purposes of God and for the benefit of others?

    01:02:44-01:02:45

Who's the ultimate example of that?

    01:02:46-01:02:48

You're like, well, my grandma was really good at that.

    01:02:48-01:02:50

She might've been, but she's not the ultimate example.

    01:02:51-01:02:56

I have a next door neighbor who he's real, I'm sure he's fantastic, but that's not the example.

    01:02:56-01:03:03

Who is the ultimate example of this type of I'm giving myself for you?

    01:03:03-01:03:09

Who is the ultimate example of humility for the purposes of God?

    01:03:09-01:03:09

    Who is it?

    01:03:10-01:03:11

    It's Jesus Christ.

    01:03:12-01:03:15

And next week, that's the sermon.

    01:03:17-01:03:23

You know, read ahead, but it's all about having the mindset that Jesus Christ had.

  • 00:00-00:25

We're gonna be picking up in verse 27. Last week where we left off, the Apostle Paul says, "To live is," what? "Christ, and to die is gain." So he was saying, "You know, I would actually prefer to die, and, you know, I'm actually chained to a guard.

    00:25-00:33

I would prefer to die and be with Christ, but it's more necessary that I stay for you.

    00:36-00:48

So today we're going to pick up in verse 27, and before we get to the text, I wanna just to kinda show you what Paul's thinking here, why he's writing some of the things that he's writing.

    00:49-00:51

I know some of you know my dog.

    00:51-00:52

    Let's get that picture.

    00:52-00:53

    This is Gordy.

    00:54-00:55

    (dog whining)

    00:57-00:58

He's really, oh there he is.

    00:58-00:59

    That's Gordy.

    01:01-01:04

    Actual size, actually.

    01:06-01:13

But, something that I've learned is that I'm really lame at training dogs.

    01:14-01:16

    Now, he's a boxer.

    01:18-01:22

How many of you have had boxers or had to deal with boxers?

    01:22-01:22

    Okay, a lot of hands.

    01:23-01:24

How many of you have boxers right now?

    01:24-01:25

I know some of you do.

    01:25-01:26

    OK.

    01:27-01:27

    All right.

    01:29-01:31

So you'll back me up on this.

    01:33-01:42

Boxers are like coiled springs electrically charged on steroids, right?

    01:42-01:53

Like they are constantly just-- growing up, we had an English bulldog, and that thing was basically a watermelon with legs, only it wasn't quite as active as a watermelon.

    01:55-02:03

So I went from having this English bulldog that was lazy, and you actually had to carry the thing and put it in bed.

    02:03-02:05

I mean, it was this lazy bulldog.

    02:05-02:12

And then, you know, to having these boxers, and these things are just like constantly on the go.

    02:12-02:16

Well, I've tried to train them.

    02:17-02:30

I had one before this one who had passed away, and we got this one a few years ago, But actually a man from our church, Mark Bloomingdale, was teaching me some things about training.

    02:30-02:33

He's not a dog trainer. I'm gonna get that out.

    02:34-02:40

But he was telling me some things that I was doing wrong in training the dog.

    02:42-02:46

And he explained to me that dogs are actually pack animals, right?

    02:46-02:49

Like wolves. And in every pack you have what?

    02:50-02:57

You have the leader of the pack, which was also a really cool song back in the day.

    02:57-03:23

Remember that song? But you have the pack leader, and unless that dog identifies you as the pack leader, there's going to be some tension on over who is the actual pack leader. So Mark had told me that I need to assert myself and work with the dog in such a way that he knows I'm the leader of the pack and he is not.

    03:26-03:45

Well here's the problem. We've been working with Gordy, but the problem that we've discovered is that through all of this process of establishing the pack leader, we found out in our home that I am not the pack leader.

    03:47-03:50

And actually, Erin is the pack leader.

    03:51-03:58

Okay, my wife Erin is the pack leader in our wolf pack.

    04:00-04:03

And here's how we know this.

    04:05-04:22

When Erin goes somewhere, if she has to go to the store or whatever, and I'm staying at home working on things, as soon as the door shuts, Gordy does things that he would never do when she's in the house.

    04:24-04:25

    And it's hilarious.

    04:25-04:32

The door will shut and immediately I'll hear the click of his toenails on the hardwood floor.

    04:32-04:34

I'll hear click, click, click, click, click.

    04:36-04:38

    He jumps on the bed.

    04:39-04:42

What are the chances that dog would jump on the bed when Aaron's home?

    04:43-04:48

He knows that she would turn him inside out if he jumped on the bed.

    04:48-04:50

As soon as she's gone, he's on the bed.

    04:50-04:53

The other day, she went somewhere and I was at home working.

    04:54-04:54

    Where is the dog?

    04:55-04:56

I went out to look for him.

    04:56-04:57

    He was on the couch.

    04:58-04:59

That dog has never been on the couch.

    05:02-05:11

The thing is, when the pack leader's there, Gordy knows what he's allowed to do and what he's not allowed to do.

    05:12-05:19

When Aaron's not there, Gordy's like, I'll just do whatever I want.

    05:20-05:21

    Who's gonna stop me?

    05:21-05:22

    What's his name?

    05:26-05:28

Well, why are you sharing this?

    05:28-05:29

    Well, here's why.

    05:29-05:35

Look at verse 27, because this idea is really what Paul is talking about here.

    05:37-05:54

He says, "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ," here it is, "so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit." And then he goes on, we're going to get to that.

    05:55-05:57

But see, this was the Apostle Paul's concern.

    05:58-06:01

My concern is that you're walking with Christ.

    06:03-06:04

    Whether I'm there or not.

    06:06-06:09

You're not allowed on the couch, Gordy, whether I'm there or not.

    06:10-06:20

And Paul's saying, "Church of Philippi, you need to be conducting yourselves in a godly way whether I'm there or not." That's what I want to hear.

    06:22-06:26

You remember in elementary school, when the teacher would leave the room?

    06:27-06:30

I don't know how it was at your school, but I'll tell you how it was at our school.

    06:31-06:57

When the teacher would leave the room, it would turn into absolute chaos. Kids would be dancing on desks and throwing things and doing all kinds of crazy things. Then you'd have the one kid like posting lookout to see when the teacher was coming back, so that when the teacher walked in her room, every kid was sitting in the chair perfectly quiet. And it's the whole idea of, listen, this isn't just putting on a show like, "Oh, Paul's coming to town. We better act real spiritual.

    06:59-08:01

Paul's coming to town. We better show him that, you know, he didn't waste his time with it. Let's put on a good face for Paul. Paul, because it doesn't matter if I'm there or not." So let's look at the text here. We're gonna break it down. The first word, every word's important by the way. Every word's important. The first word in verse 27 is "only." Now you need to circle that word in your Bible because this is emphatic in the Greek. This is a very important word. What he's saying is this is the bottom line. With everything I'm telling you, listen, this is it. This is what I need to tell you. That's what he's saying by starting with the He says, "Only let your manner of life..." Now this is an interesting word in the Greek.

    08:01-08:04

I'm not here to give you a Greek lesson, but when it's important, it's important.

    08:04-08:07

And it helps us. If you miss this, you're gonna miss the rest of the sermon.

    08:09-08:16

But the Greek word for manner of life is "polis." It's actually the word for city.

    08:22-09:47

So when he's talking about, he goes, "Listen, let your polis, your manner of life..." What he's saying is you need to be a good citizen. What does a good citizen do? A good citizen does what is for the good of others. A good citizen reflects the values of the state. And the reason Paul would use this word is Philippi was part of Rome. And Roman citizens were very proud of that. Okay, Roman citizens would have had Roman names, Roman clothes, they would have prayed to Roman deities, they would have sworn to the Roman Emperor. You know, to be a part of Rome was a big deal. And they were very proud of that. Sort of like being from Pittsburgh and you travel, you know, make you pack my penguins jersey, right? Make sure you pack my Stiller shirt." You know, it's that sense of, "I'm proud of where I'm from." But in the Roman culture it was even more than that, if you can believe that. Actually, in Acts chapter 16, talking about Philippi, it says, verses 20 and 21, "When they had brought them to the magistrates, they said, "These men are Jews and they are disturbing our city.

    09:47-10:14

They're disturbing Philippi. What are they doing that's so bad?" Well, listen to this, "They advocate customs that are not lawful for us as Romans to accept or practice." What they're saying is, "They're not acting like Romans and that's a problem. That'd be like somebody visiting you here from out of town and they don't know the customs.

    10:15-11:00

They put the coleslaw beside the sandwich, not on the sandwich, and you're like, "That's not how we do it here." They show up wearing their Ravens jersey. You're like, "Seriously, are you trying to get beat up?" But that's what on here. It's that's not how we do it as Roman citizens. So I think you're starting to see Paul's point. Actually in Philippians 3 20 Paul says, "But our citizenship is in heaven and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ." You You are a citizen of heaven.

    11:04-11:08

And a citizen of heaven reflects the values of heaven.

    11:10-11:13

So look back at your text here, 127.

    11:13-11:29

He says, "Only let your manner of life, let your citizenship be worthy." Now don't get tripped up on that.

    11:29-11:34

You know, some people could read this and say, wow, I need to try harder to be a Christian.

    11:35-11:39

That's what the Christian life is about, is just trying to be a better boy or trying to be a better girl.

    11:40-11:46

And you know, maybe I, this word worthy could also be translated appropriately.

    11:49-11:55

I mean, not like translated appropriately, translated, air quotes, appropriately.

    11:58-12:18

So don't miss this. He's saying, "Act how is appropriate for a citizen of heaven." You're like, "Well, what does that mean?" Think about it this way. How do people in heaven act?

    12:19-12:26

If you were to take a field trip to heaven today and come back and and do a report on how people were acting in heaven.

    12:27-12:28

    What would you report?

    12:34-12:37

Live as a citizen of heaven, even while you're on the earth.

    12:38-12:38

    Here's what that means.

    12:39-12:41

People say about you, you know what?

    12:42-12:45

She seems like she really cares about people.

    12:46-12:50

Well, that's appropriate because she's a citizen of heaven.

    12:53-12:55

You know, that guy, he's really honest.

    12:55-12:56

    That guy's really honest.

    12:56-12:57

    Well, you know what?

    12:57-12:58

    That only makes sense.

    12:58-12:58

    Why?

    12:59-13:01

Because that's how citizens of heaven act.

    13:01-13:01

    They're honest.

    13:03-13:05

    Well, that guy's really trustworthy.

    13:05-13:08

You know, if he says he's gonna do something, he does it, and you can always trust him.

    13:09-13:09

    Well, that makes sense.

    13:10-13:12

That's how citizens of heaven act.

    13:17-13:18

    You know, she's really forgiving.

    13:19-13:22

She's had to deal with a lot of stuff in her life, and she has been so forgiving.

    13:23-13:28

Well, that makes sense because that's how citizens of heaven act.

    13:29-13:30

That's exactly what Paul's saying here.

    13:30-13:33

You know, you people are so proud of your Roman citizenship.

    13:34-13:47

You're citizens of heaven, actually, in the rest of the phrase, he goes, "Let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ." He says, "Your citizenship is with the gospel." That's the citizenship you need to be focused on.

    13:53-13:58

Basically, it's a life consistent with what you preach.

    13:59-14:01

    It's practicing what you proclaim.

    14:04-14:21

And you're like, "Oh yeah, here comes another one of these sermons." This is so important, Christians, because we, I think, sometimes more than any other people on the earth, we miss the forest for the trees here.

    14:22-14:24

And we become the biggest hypocrites on the planet.

    14:28-16:24

I was talking to another harvest pastor this week, just getting caught up, and, "Hey, going on in your church and what's going on in my kind of thing and he told me there was a man in his church who was really bent out of shape over the elephant room thing. Remember the elephant room? This guy was so bent out of shape over the elephant room and he would not let it go. He was just constantly like, "I can't believe they would talk to TD Jakes!" He just would not let it go and this pastor friend of mine was like, "Dude, seriously, the elephant room was like when when did that happen like seriously it's time to move on I understand your concern I don't agree with your concern it's time to move on but this guy still you know putting stuff on the internet and still you know getting people ripped I can't believe the elephant room I gotta you know it's wrong just this guy had built this whole platform this whole soapbox this anybody that stands still for more than three seconds is going to hear about my displeasure concerning the elephant room. Well then this man's wife put on Facebook, this Mr. Anti-Elephant Room guy, his wife put on Facebook, "What do you call a man that cheats on his wife?" "Answer, my husband." We are so guilty of that. We get running around and our feathers are ruffled and our britches are in a bunch because of some stupid little campaign and we're missing the obvious thing. Like I'm glad that kind of stuff doesn't happen here, really.

    16:25-16:43

We're all concerned about, you know, we got this election coming up and we concerned. But with all the campaigning you're doing for one political party or another, how much energy and attention are you putting into your marriage?

    16:44-16:55

How much energy and attention are you putting in to raising your kids? How much energy and attention are you putting into reaching out to that lost person that you work with?

    16:57-17:29

How much energy and attention are you putting into your integrity. We're not as unlike this guy as we think. That's why Paul says, "You're a citizen of heaven. Act like it. Act like it." They're not going behind people's backs in heaven. They don't act like that.

    17:32-17:47

There's not hatred and bitterness in heaven. They don't act like that. And you don't act like that either. They're not lying to each other in heaven. There are no secret sins in heaven. They don't act like that. You're a citizen of heaven.

    17:54-18:10

Act But when did being immersed in a culture of social programs and politics and inner church quarreling, when did all this stuff replace the gospel?

    18:13-18:16

Citizen of heaven, you're a citizen of heaven, let's act like it.

    18:16-18:18

Like, okay, well, can you be more specific?

    18:19-18:22

Actually, yeah, let's continue in the text.

    18:22-18:25

    things today. Three things.

    18:26-22:03

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit. So the first word on your outline is "stand." we will not be moved. Stand firm. Actually, this is a military term. It refers to a soldier on his post. A soldier on his post meaning this is where I'm taking my stand and the only thing that's removing me from this position is somebody killing me. That's what that word means. I'm taking my stand. So Paul tells the church be an appropriate citizen, walk worthy. How? First of all, stand firm. He says in one spirit. Now he's not talking about the Holy Spirit here. Certainly the Holy Spirit is behind the writing of this and Holy Spirit is who empowers the church. We get all that, but he's probably not talking about the Holy Spirit here. Actually, in your Bible the word "spirit" is probably written with a small "s" as it is in mine. Literally what it just means is "attitude." Stay on your post and everybody keep the same attitude. Now when we get to chapter 2, We're going to be talking a lot about unity. So this is sort of a down payment that Paul's giving us. But Paul's saying, "Here's the report that I want to hear, that you're not abandoning your post. That's what I want to hear. I want to hear that you guys took your post, you're standing on your post, and you're not abandoning your post. When I was in Bible college, I had longer hair and I was on the soccer team and I was informed that if I did not get my hair cut, I was going to be thrown off the soccer team. And my response was, "Oh, we don't need to fight about it, I'll just quit." And I did. Like, I don't want it to be like a big issue, so I'll just quit. This "so easy to quit" attitude, we're all just too quick to quit. You know, whether it's our television provider, our cell phone carrier, our marriage, we've learned to program ourselves to say we don't really need to stick to anything. If I don't like something, I'll just quit. If I don't agree with something, I'll just quit. Paul here says, I want to hear that you're standing firm, that you're not moving, that you're not bailing. And again, he's talking about unity in the church. It's protecting... what's unity in the church?

    22:03-22:13

Well, we're gonna see this as we go through Philippians, but one of the things, it's protecting relationships. It's saying, you know, sometimes it's worth but to have the hard conversations.

    22:14-22:17

And I've lived in this area most of my life and I've shared this with you before.

    22:19-22:26

Is this like a, this culture thing or is this sort of like permeating the United States or I don't know.

    22:28-22:37

But what I'm finding more and more, at least in this area, it's easier to avoid people for years than to have one hard conversation with people.

    22:38-22:39

    Isn't that true?

    22:42-22:45

You know, instead of sitting down saying, "Sam, you know what?

    22:45-22:47

That offended me when you said that, man.

    22:47-22:50

That really bothered me and I think you're out of line to say that.

    22:50-22:57

We need to talk about it." Instead of having that conversation, I'll do whatever I can to avoid Sam for the next five years.

    22:58-23:03

So maybe then if I run into him, we'll just act like nothing happened, right?

    23:03-23:04

    Isn't that what we do?

    23:05-23:06

Now, seriously, is that like here?

    23:06-23:07

Is that-- Did they do that out in Philadelphia?

    23:09-23:11

Okay, so maybe it's a Pennsylvania thing.

    23:12-23:12

    All right.

    23:13-23:14

    They do that in Ohio?

    23:15-23:16

    Oh gosh, it's spreading.

    23:18-23:19

    That bothers me.

    23:20-23:22

Sit down and have the conversation.

    23:27-23:31

I'm blocking you from my friends list on Facebook, which a lot of people did after last week's sermon.

    23:31-23:34

You realize that whole beginning was just a joke.

    23:37-23:38

    Protect relationships.

    23:38-23:40

Don't be afraid to have hard conversations.

    23:41-23:42

    Unity's worth it.

    23:44-23:50

Okay, can we, you know, if this whole thing is spreading, can we be like the start of, let's start something new.

    23:51-23:59

Let's start a new thing where if we have an issue with someone, we're going to lovingly go to the person to talk about, well, you know, that's not really new.

    23:59-24:01

Jesus actually told us to do that.

    24:01-24:02

    But here's something new.

    24:02-24:04

Let's be people that actually do it.

    24:05-24:05

    How about that?

    24:08-24:10

    So protecting relationships, standing firm.

    24:10-24:11

    What else does that mean?

    24:12-24:19

Jot this down, "standing on the truth of God's word." We're going to see that also, especially when we get to Philippians chapter three.

    24:20-24:21

There is a danger of false teachers.

    24:29-24:31

And Paul says you need to stand firm.

    24:33-24:38

Stand firm and not moving from sound doctrine.

    24:42-24:46

Now, it's easy, it's easy to evaluate sermons here.

    24:48-24:53

Because at Harvest Bible Chapel, what we do is we go through a book at a time, we take a chunk at a time.

    24:54-24:55

    That's what we do.

    24:55-26:28

Last year, if you were with us, we went through Colossians and we started at Colossians at the very first verse and we ended at the very last verse. That's what we're doing this year with Philippians. We start at the first verse, we're going to end with the last verse. Why do we do that? Because if I just preached about what I felt like preaching about, I'm not going to give you the whole counsel of God. I'm probably only going to lean in certain areas and only give you certain things and you're gonna get a very unbalanced diet. We believe that God wrote this book, so in preaching it, we're going to go through and cover all of the issues that God covers in his word, and we're going to do them in the order that he covers them. Not random topics, not "let me tell you some things that I was thinking about this week." Let's go through God's word a verse at a time. So here's how you evaluate sermons. Go home, take the passage that we looked at together, and ask yourself, "Is this what the passage says?" That's how you evaluate a sermon. You know, sometimes people evaluate sermons based on, "I don't like the personality of the preacher," or "I didn't like his illustration," or whatever. That's not how you evaluate a sermon. You Now, is this what the text says?

    26:28-26:42

You should be able, after the sermon, to go through these verses and say, "Oh, I see why Jeff said that, because that's just what it says here." Honestly, that's my evaluation every week.

    26:44-26:58

Every Sunday afternoon, I go back to say, "Did I just say what the text says?" That's the only thing that the church can be unified on.

    26:58-27:05

We have an objective source of truth that becomes our rallying point.

    27:07-27:08

    So first of all, stand.

    27:08-27:10

    We will not be moved.

    27:11-27:12

    We will not be moved.

    27:12-27:19

Secondly, to live a worthy life, to be an appropriate citizen, so to speak, right down the word strive.

    27:19-27:20

    We will not quit.

    27:24-27:28

He says, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit.

    27:29-27:37

Look at the next phrase in verse twenty seven, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.

    27:40-27:45

So first we had this military term of standing, not abandoning the post, striving.

    27:45-27:47

    Here's actually an athletic term.

    27:49-27:50

    That literally means sweating.

    27:51-27:53

We're going to sweat it out together.

    27:53-28:00

So working together, side by side-- all right, help me with the illustration here.

    28:00-28:10

When you think of athletics and you think of athletes that are lined up side by side, sweating together, working towards a common purpose, what do you think of?

    28:12-28:13

    No, not tennis.

    28:15-28:16

    Football, right?

    28:17-28:17

    She said football.

    28:18-28:18

    Football, right?

    28:21-28:24

Common goal, laying it all out.

    28:27-28:29

And there is power in unity.

    28:29-28:39

But understand this, when we talk about unity, as we'll be doing a lot, because that's what comes up in Philippians, understand it's not unity for unity's sake.

    28:40-28:42

Like, hey, let's just all try to get along, why?

    28:44-28:45

Just for the sake of getting along?

    28:47-28:49

The end game, what is it?

    28:51-28:53

Striving side by side for what?

    28:53-28:55

He says, for the faith of the gospel.

    29:00-29:02

But here's the thing, church, what disrupts unity?

    29:06-29:12

Almost all the time, what disrupts unity in a church is something subtle.

    29:14-29:19

When there's disunity in the church, when there are people upset and there's discord.

    29:24-29:33

Many times what I've seen personally and in talking with other pastors, you know, you kind of look back and say, what exactly is the problem?

    29:35-29:42

You see, a lot of times it's not blatant, gross, obvious sin because that's easy.

    29:45-29:50

You know, so-and-so, you know, is in sin and we're, you know, we're dealing with it in a biblical way.

    29:50-29:53

That'd be an easy thing to sort of put your finger on.

    29:53-30:01

But when there's disunity in the church, somehow it manages to creep in.

    30:03-30:14

It manages to creep in and manifest itself through criticism, through blaming, through accusing, through bitterness.

    30:19-30:21

Now, Steelers play at one today.

    30:22-30:24

Now, are they wearing those throwback uniforms today?

    30:25-30:27

Is that today they're wearing those things?

    30:27-30:29

    Have you seen these things?

    30:31-30:33

All right, all in favor of the throwback uniforms.

    30:34-30:34

    Anybody?

    30:37-30:38

    A couple of you.

    30:38-30:41

    Darren, you like those things.

    30:47-31:13

Wow, I am shocked. I saw a picture this week, it was Ben and Kiesel, like, standing on a field wearing these things, and I thought they lost a bet. Well, one o'clock, the Steelers start. Imagine that James Harrison doesn't care for the throwback uniforms.

    31:17-31:39

They're like, "You're wearing them." He's like, "All right." And he only goes at it sort of half-hearted today. Could you imagine? I'm only going at it half-hearted today. And somebody says, well that that's like Taylor's gimmick, don't take that.

    31:41-33:25

Or Big Ben doesn't like Mike Tomlin's coaching. So he's like, you know what, if this is how it's gonna be, I'm just gonna do my own thing. You know, Ben in the shotgun formation and they snap him the ball and he punts it. It's like first and ten. Like what are you guys doing? Well why isn't that going to happen? Why aren't you going to see Harrison playing half-hearted? Why aren't you going to see Ben punting on first and ten? Because they don't care. It's not going to happen because they're striving side by side for a common purpose. There's the legendary Herb Brooks that says the name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back. He was talking about hockey, but I'd like to share that with you, talking about the church. So let me ask you, what's more important? What's more important to you, unity or being right? Unity or my preferences, unity or my opinions. Don't sweat over the differences. You need to sweat over the commitment to unity. And in order to do that you need to see the big picture. That's why Paul says, "Striving side by side for what? For the faith of the gospel, the faith of the gospel.

    33:27-33:28

You have to get that big picture.

    33:28-33:32

Why are we doing what we're doing here for the faith of the gospel?

    33:37-33:40

    So stand, strive and finally.

    33:42-33:43

    Let's talk about suffering.

    33:45-33:46

    Verses 28 through 30.

    33:49-33:53

He says, "And not frightened in anything by your opponents.

    33:54-34:00

This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation and that from God.

    34:00-34:36

For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ, you should not only believe in him, but also suffer for his sake, engage in the same conflict that you saw I had, and now hear that I still have." So lastly on your outline, write down, "Suffer. We will not be afraid." Living as a citizen of heaven, let me ask you, how many people in heaven right now do you think are wrestling with fear?

    34:36-34:37

    How many?

    34:39-34:41

How many people in heaven are wrestling with fear?

    34:43-34:45

Hold up the universal sign for how many?

    34:47-34:47

    Zero.

    34:48-34:49

    Why?

    34:50-34:51

    Because God's right here.

    34:52-34:53

What do I have to be afraid of?

    34:54-34:58

    But God's right here too.

    35:00-35:05

We don't see him as they do in heaven, but that doesn't mean his presence isn't here.

    35:07-35:09

Do you know the Bible says, "Fear not"?

    35:09-35:41

how many times? I know some people, the Bible says 365 times fear not, one for every day of the year. That's not true. That was in that movie, wasn't it? Like Facing the Giants or something, don't they say that? I've gotten emails that say that. That's not true. It's actually somewhere around a hundred times. Your Fear not. Fear not.

    35:42-35:43

    That's what Paul says here.

    35:45-35:47

Not frightened in anything by your opponents.

    35:47-35:48

Now what's his statement all about?

    35:48-36:02

He says, "This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God." Well, Tertullian, the church historian, was converted because he watched a slave girl face death with courage.

    36:03-36:05

That's the kind of thing he's talking about here.

    36:09-36:15

Seeing the suffering of God's people and those inflicting the suffering, there's a sense of I am wrong.

    36:17-36:17

    She is right.

    36:19-36:24

I realize now that I'm on the wrong side of this.

    36:26-36:31

Now, when we talk about suffering here, we're not speaking of suffering in general, like for example, sickness.

    36:32-36:38

I'm still getting over this flu, this fever that I've had all week, you can probably tell.

    36:41-36:44

But this isn't suffering for the sake of Christ.

    36:46-36:52

I'm not talking about, "Well, I've been having financial problem." That's suffering for the sake of Christ. No, that's called life.

    36:53-36:55

We're all going to suffer in those areas.

    36:55-36:57

This is a specific kind of suffering.

    36:57-37:00

You see, at the end of verse 29, it's suffering for His sake.

    37:01-37:08

It's suffering that's a direct result of making your stand with Jesus Christ.

    37:09-37:11

It's the suffering that results for that.

    37:11-37:18

I'm just going to stop here and say, honestly, I have no idea how to preach on these persecution passages here in America.

    37:19-37:39

I mean, I've preached a lot of sermons over the last 15 years, and you get to these passages about persecution, about suffering for the gospel of Christ, about, you know, standing up and, you know, sharing the gospel and facing backlash because people hate Christ, people hate the gospel.

    37:41-37:44

I don't know how to preach that in America, I just don't, I'll be honest with you.

    37:45-37:48

We are so clueless, all of us.

    37:52-37:58

So there again this week, I was looking at this, Oh, here we have one of these persecution passages.

    37:58-37:59

    What do I...

    38:00-38:02

And I was thinking about this moment, I'm like, what do I even say?

    38:05-38:13

Do I really think that there are people sitting in this auditorium that are enduring anything that resembles persecution?

    38:19-38:26

So much of scripture teaches that citizens of heaven will be mistreated by those of this world.

    38:29-38:34

And I think we're doing such a good job of being undercover that the world can't spot us.

    38:39-38:41

So I don't know what to tell you about persecution.

    38:45-39:14

other than to say, "If you really act appropriately as a citizen of heaven while living on this earth, that is going to bother the people of this earth to the point that you will be persecuted." And when that happens, when that happens, here's a word for you.

    39:16-39:24

Verse twenty nine says, for it has been granted to you that word granted is the same word where we get the word grace.

    39:27-39:31

We think suffering is bad, persecution is bad.

    39:31-39:35

Actually, persecution is a gracious gift of Christ.

    39:38-39:47

So when you suffer because of your commitment to Christ, throughout eternity, you're going to look back at that as a grace.

    39:50-40:00

Acts, chapter five, verse forty one, when the early disciples were persecuted, they didn't run home and lock the door and say, this church thing isn't working.

    40:01-40:12

Do you remember what they did? Back handsprings all the way down the avenue saying, "We were considered worthy to suffer for Christ." And here's all I can tell you about that.

    40:12-40:14

You'll know what that's like when it happens.

    40:17-40:23

But if your faith hasn't ever brought some level of suffering, that's a problem.

    40:27-40:29

How can you not expect suffering for faith?

    40:32-40:35

We're redeemed people but still living in a cursed world.

    40:47-40:55

When you stand as a citizen of heaven and you start saying things like, "You know what? Maybe some other people at work are taking some shortcuts.

    40:57-41:00

I'm not going to do it." And suddenly you're the odd man out.

    41:03-41:05

You're going to start to know.

    41:08-41:13

When you begin to say, "You know, I'm not going to watch my family and friends make decisions that are going to destroy their lives.

    41:14-41:30

I'm going to speak up and say something to them." And your family and friends hate you because you had the gall to speak up and say, "You know, I think you're making a bad decision "because this is what the Bible says." And now all of a sudden, you're the odd man out, you're going to start to know.

    41:34-41:36

"I'm going to reflect the values of heaven.

    41:36-41:50

"I'm going to live worthy no matter what the cost is." As a citizen of heaven, We need to see ourselves as tourists on the earth.

    41:51-41:52

    You know that?

    41:54-41:56

So here's a good citizenship statement.

    41:58-42:01

If it's easy, it isn't right.

    42:04-42:08

And if it's right, it isn't easy.

    42:11-42:13

So would you bow your heads with me?

    42:17-42:20

And this is a call for all of us, as I've already said this morning.

    42:21-42:25

The last thing we wanna do here is play games with this.

    42:31-42:39

If you truly consider yourself, if I truly consider myself as a citizen of heaven, how can that not affect our conduct?

    42:45-42:54

So the word to all of us, myself included, our manner of life must be worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    42:54-42:57

Are we living appropriately as citizens of heaven?

    43:04-43:05

    Are we standing firm?

    43:10-43:13

Have you made the commitment to say, I'm not going to be moved?

    43:21-43:22

    Strive together.

    43:28-43:28

    Have you made that commitment?

    43:29-43:31

    I'm not a church goer.

    43:36-43:38

When I show up, it's to work.

    43:38-43:41

It's to strive side by side.

    43:43-43:46

It's to work together for the sake of the gospel.

    43:54-43:56

    And to suffer victoriously.

    43:57-43:58

    Not afraid.

    44:01-44:03

People that are in heaven aren't afraid.

    44:05-44:06

    Why should I be afraid?

    44:09-44:13

The worst thing that anybody could do to me is actually the best thing anybody could do to me?

    44:14-44:16

What, kill me and send me straight to heaven?

    44:19-44:48

I will not fear when living as a citizen of heaven offends people, not because I'm obnoxious, not because I'm trying to be some self-righteous Bible-thumper, but simply for being someone who represents Jesus Christ, someone who simply wishes to represent the values of Heaven while I'm here on the earth.

    44:50-44:51

    That's a worthy life.
