Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Glory

Introduction:

Manifesting His Glory - What Jesus Wants Us to Know from His First Miracle (John 2:1-12):

  1. Jesus Cares about what you Care about. (John 2:3)

Matthew 10:29-31 - Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  1. Jesus turns Ordinary things into Extrardinary things. (John 2:9)
  2. Jesus saves the Best for Last. (John 2:10)

Romans 8:18 - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

The Gospel according to John. Are you there?

    01:14-01:23

The Gospel of John was written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    01:23-01:26

And that's our ministry theme this year is knowing Jesus.

    01:26-01:33

Can you think of anything greater to go after as a church, as a family, as individuals?

    01:33-01:37

Can you think of anything greater to go after than knowing Jesus Christ?

    01:37-01:38

    That's what we're going after.

    01:39-01:40

which we find in the Gospel of John.

    01:41-01:50

Because according to Jesus, eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ, who God the Father sent.

    01:51-01:58

We saw in chapter 1, these past three weeks, we've seen three glorious truths about knowing Jesus.

    01:59-02:01

The first one is He's made Himself known.

    02:02-02:06

That's the only way we know anything about Him is He has made Himself known.

    02:06-02:11

And we saw from John the Baptist We need to prepare ourselves to know Him.

    02:11-02:13

Any obstacles in the way, clear them out.

    02:14-02:15

Prepare the way for the Lord.

    02:17-02:25

And last week we saw that like all disciples who truly know Jesus Christ, our job is to make Him known.

    02:27-02:35

So today, Jesus' ministry sort of goes public at a wedding.

    02:37-02:51

Now, by virtue of my position, and by virtue of how long I have been doing this job, I would guess that I've probably been to more weddings than most people here.

    02:53-03:05

Therefore, it follows that I have seen more embarrassing things at weddings, more crazy things at weddings probably most people here.

    03:08-03:10

And I thought, boy, I could share some stories.

    03:10-03:13

And I had a whole bunch of stories I was going to share with you.

    03:14-03:19

I'm just going to share one, because the embarrassment was on me on this one.

    03:21-03:25

But years ago, I did a wedding for this young couple.

    03:25-03:38

They were family members of a friend of mine that I used to do services at these senior housing facilities and this young couple came to me because I knew their grandma.

    03:39-03:50

Okay, and they're like, "We do our weddings, so we went through the whole counseling and the whole rehearsal and went through the whole wedding and the whole rigmarole, so we get done with the wedding." And Erin was with me at the time.

    03:50-03:56

Sometimes she can't, because of our kid situation, can't go to weddings, but this is, I don't know, was this before kids or?

    03:57-04:00

Oh, they were small enough that we could contain them at that point.

    04:00-04:02

Okay, a babysitter could handle them at that point.

    04:02-04:36

why Aaron was able to join me on this one. So we're like, "Hey, you know, wedding and wedding reception, like, gonna be a great date, right?" Because, I mean, I was dressed up and Aaron, she just looks so beautiful and I'm like taking my girl down to the wedding reception and so we walk into the to the lobby of the banquet hall with a wedding reception. As you know, there's a table set up with all the little, you know, the cards that have the names and the table that you're, where you're supposed to sit.

    04:36-04:37

You know what I'm talking about?

    04:37-04:40

Like name, you're table one and you're table 16 or whatever.

    04:40-04:44

So Aaron and I walk in and like I said, we're just ready for the big party.

    04:46-04:47

    We're looking through the list.

    04:52-04:57

We're not with the Ms. Maybe it's not alphabetized.

    04:57-05:00

So we go back over and we're looking at the list again.

    05:02-05:09

I'm like, "Hey, do you see our name anywhere?" She's like, "Still looking." We're looking, we're looking, we're looking.

    05:11-05:18

We weren't invited to the reception of the wedding that I just held.

    05:20-05:23

So this was awkward, because now we're standing in the lobby.

    05:25-05:28

And I'm like, let's just get out of here.

    05:29-05:30

So we just kind of snuck out.

    05:30-05:31

    I'm like, you know what?

    05:32-05:33

I felt so bad for Erin.

    05:33-05:34

I'm like, I'm going to take her to dinner.

    05:34-05:38

So we ended up going down the road a little bit to another restaurant.

    05:38-05:39

I'm like, take my girl to dinner.

    05:39-05:41

So we go, have a real nice dinner.

    05:41-05:43

We ended up having a real nice date anyways.

    05:43-05:57

But we come out of the restaurant, I get back in the car and I open the door and I just happened to glimpse in the backseat of the car, I forgot to give the couple their marriage license.

    05:59-06:03

So now, and they were going on a honeymoon, so they needed the documentation.

    06:04-06:13

So I'm like, I've got to go back in there to this reception, where I wasn't invited the first time.

    06:15-06:21

So I walk back in, and I kid you not, as I walk in.

    06:22-06:32

The groom and the whole bridal party, and the bride, they're all up on the stage on their elevated place with the table, and I kid you not, the groom sees me coming.

    06:33-06:34

    And he hollers.

    06:35-06:37

He's like, "Pastor Jeff!" He goes, "Hey, hey, hey!

    06:38-07:19

If you're hungry, I think they've got some leftovers in the kitchen!" And I'm like, "Oh, you saved me some scraps from your table?" I'm like, "No, I'm just here to drop off marriage license and I gave it to him and very shamedly walked out of there but there are some crazy things that I have seen at weddings but the craziest thing that has ever happened in a wedding is right here in this passage And in Jesus' day, the wedding was the most important event in the community.

    07:21-07:22

It's a little different than weddings today.

    07:22-07:26

Today, when you have a wedding, the bride is the main event, right?

    07:26-07:28

But in this day, the groom was the main event.

    07:30-07:35

You see, the couple would get betrothed, which meant they were legally married, but they weren't together.

    07:37-07:51

But the groom would go away and prepare a place for them, and then he would, unexpected, unannounced, return one day and take his bride to be with him.

    07:52-08:05

But this return included the wedding festivities, including the wedding reception, which lasted for days, even up to a week.

    08:05-08:08

And that's important to understand because I hope the story makes sense.

    08:08-08:12

That this wasn't some hour or two long wedding party.

    08:12-08:16

This was a days long wedding party.

    08:16-08:16

    Alright?

    08:17-08:18

So look at verses 1 and 2 here.

    08:19-08:20

    John chapter 2.

    08:20-08:26

It says, "On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

    08:28-08:35

Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples." So this is the third day.

    08:35-08:39

This is the day after the whole exchange with Nathaniel we talked about last week.

    08:40-08:43

And Cana was actually a very, very, very small village.

    08:44-08:46

And Mary, Jesus' mother, was there.

    08:46-08:51

And apparently she had some sort of a role in the wedding and the coordination.

    08:53-08:56

She had some part of it you're going to see here in a second.

    08:58-09:11

Verse 3, it says, "When the wine ran out, The mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." Now this is a problem.

    09:13-09:19

Because it was the groom's job - remember I said he went away for a year to prepare a place?

    09:19-09:27

It was his job to provide for his wife, and it was his job to provide for the wedding party.

    09:28-09:40

Okay, so he just spent a year trying to prove to his in-laws that he could be a provider for this woman that he is marrying.

    09:42-10:04

And not off to a great start. Like, "What's the matter, son? You couldn't even provide for the wedding party. You think you're going to provide for my little girl? What's the matter with you?" So this was a problem. Like, what happened here? We don't know. Did he Did he underestimate how many people were coming or how much wine they were going to drink?

    10:04-10:05

    Was it just poor planning?

    10:06-10:08

Did he run out of money?

    10:08-10:11

Like, "I wanted to buy more, I just didn't have..." We don't know.

    10:13-10:17

What we do know is Mary informs Jesus.

    10:20-10:21

    And that's interesting.

    10:22-10:31

Because when you think about it, I'm not really sure at first why she would have informed Jesus, Because at this point, He hasn't done any miracles.

    10:32-10:34

So my question is, what was she expecting Him to do?

    10:36-10:48

Like, "Jesus, can you spot us some money?" Or, "Can you and your disciples pull your money together and run down to sheets or something?" I don't know what she was expecting.

    10:50-10:52

So why did she bring this problem to Jesus?

    10:52-10:58

the only real logical answer is, she was his mother.

    10:59-11:04

And for 30 years of his life, she would have seen nothing but wisdom from him, right?

    11:05-11:06

    Great choices, great ideas.

    11:07-11:09

That's all she would have ever seen from him.

    11:09-11:12

So, in this situation, who are you going to turn to?

    11:12-11:13

Who are you going to turn to for advice?

    11:14-11:16

Who are you going to turn to to try to fix this problem?

    11:17-11:19

She's like, "My son is literally perfect.

    11:19-11:26

and I'm going to turn to Him." So she goes to Jesus and she says they have no wine.

    11:27-11:27

    Look at verse 4.

    11:28-11:32

"And Jesus said to her, 'Woman, what does this have to do with Me?

    11:34-11:45

My hour has not yet come.'" Now, when you read this in the English, this can sound harsh.

    11:47-11:47

    To say, "Woman?

    11:49-11:50

What does this have to do with me?

    11:50-12:00

But you have to understand, in the Greek and in this culture and in this context, there was absolutely nothing harsh about what was said here.

    12:01-12:08

First of all, the use of the word "woman" wasn't meant in a harsh way.

    12:08-12:15

It was used in the same way that we use the word "ma'am." That it's not really personal, but it's not harsh either.

    12:16-12:24

Like "ma'am." Maybe it's actually impersonal to refer to your mother that way, but it's not harsh.

    12:24-12:36

He's like, "Ma'am." And then his statement literally is, "What to me and to you." That's the literal translation of that.

    12:37-12:39

What to me and to you.

    12:40-12:42

In our vernacular, we would say it this way.

    12:44-12:46

Why is this a "we" problem?

    12:48-12:55

I could explain this further, but I know at least the husbands in this room understand this perfectly.

    12:57-12:57

    Right, husbands?

    12:57-12:58

    Back me up here.

    12:58-12:59

    Don't be afraid.

    13:01-13:05

But when your wife says "we," what does she really mean?

    13:07-13:07

    She means you.

    13:09-13:09

    Right?

    13:09-13:10

    That's what she really means.

    13:10-13:11

When your wife says "we," she means you.

    13:12-13:56

example, we had a snake in our crawl space and Aaron said, "Jeff, we need to do something about that snake." What did she mean by that? "Jeff, you need to do something about that snake." Right? What's this "we" stuff? And see, that's what's going on in this passage. You have to see that Mary comes to Jesus And she says, "Jesus, we're out of wine! We need to do something!" And Jesus is basically saying, "What do you mean, 'we'? How am I included in this problem?" Jesus was sort of pointing out here that the nature of their relationship was changing.

    13:56-13:59

His focus is now on His ministry.

    14:01-14:07

And Jesus says, "My hour has not yet come." We're going to see that as we go through John over and over and over.

    14:07-14:10

Jesus talks about His hour, the hour, the hour.

    14:13-14:15

It's about coming to die for your sins.

    14:15-14:17

To raise from the dead to give you eternal life.

    14:17-14:23

That's what He's talking about, the hour that He fulfills what God sent Him to do.

    14:25-14:38

Basically, Jesus is saying here that His agenda is the cross, and everything in His life and His ministry is about getting to that moment where he glorifies God through his sacrifice.

    14:40-14:45

So I hope that helps you understand Jesus wasn't being harsh with His mother.

    14:46-14:48

He says, "Woman, what does this have to do with me?

    14:48-15:01

How is this a 'we' problem?" He says, "My hour has not yet come." V. 5, "His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you.'" And I would say in general, that's good advice.

    15:01-15:03

If Jesus tells you to do something, I think you should do it.

    15:05-15:09

But again, I'm just not sure what she was thinking here.

    15:10-15:19

Because she comes to Jesus with the problem, and He's like, "This has nothing to do with me." And she still obviously assumed that He was going to do something.

    15:20-15:21

Right? I mean, that's pretty obvious.

    15:22-15:32

She goes, "Do whatever He tells you to do." Verse 6, it says, "Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

    15:34-15:41

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim.

    15:42-15:43

    Stop there for a second.

    15:44-15:50

So these jars were looking at about 120 to about 180 gallons of water total.

    15:51-15:54

And these jars were for purification.

    15:56-15:58

It was a Jewish ritual for washing.

    15:58-16:04

It wasn't so much a sanitation thing as much as it was a ritual thing.

    16:04-16:06

    It comes from Psalm 24.

    16:06-16:14

They would dip their hands in the water and hold their hands up to heaven as a way of saying, "Lord, I am clean before You." It was purely a ritual.

    16:14-16:16

That's what these jars were for.

    16:17-16:18

    And Scripture makes it clear.

    16:20-16:21

    That's what these were for.

    16:21-16:27

But notice, Jesus said to fill them, And it says they filled them to the brim.

    16:28-16:34

And the fact that it says they filled them to the brim shows you that what's about to happen is supernatural.

    16:35-17:27

Why? Because if they only filled them three-quarters of the way - and Jesus is about to turn this water into wine, spoiler alert - but if they only filled them like halfway or three-quarters, somebody would come along later and be like, "Oh yeah, Jesus just like, when they weren't looking, He snuck in and He dumped some wine in there, like ta-da, but the fact that they filled them all the way to the brim was proof that something supernatural was about to happen. Right? So just no room to add anything if they're 100% full. Verse 8, it says, "And he said to them, 'Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.' So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine and did not know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

    17:28-17:48

The master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine, but you have kept the good wine until now." Stop there for a second.

    17:50-17:52

You know something that baffles me about this passage?

    17:52-17:54

as what's not in the passage.

    17:55-18:10

Meaning, there was no show, there was no grand display, there was no proclamation over this water.

    18:12-18:14

And you notice Jesus himself didn't even touch it.

    18:17-18:22

And only the servants knew what happened.

    18:24-18:30

Now if you look closely, you see the head waiter, or the master of the feast, same thing, the head waiter was shocked.

    18:30-18:31

    Why?

    18:32-18:34

It wasn't because he saw a miracle.

    18:34-18:47

I mean I think our minds sort of make that bridge, like, "He's shocked he saw a miracle." No, he's not shocked because of a miracle because apparently he didn't even know a miracle happened.

    18:48-18:50

So why was he so shocked?

    18:51-18:55

He was shocked because he just assumed that the groom saved the best for last.

    18:55-18:56

    Why was that shocking?

    18:57-18:57

    Because nobody does that.

    18:59-19:00

Nobody saves the best for last.

    19:02-19:09

When you have guests, especially at a wedding, You give them the good stuff first.

    19:10-19:13

And when that runs out, you're scrambling to just give them whatever's on hand.

    19:14-19:15

    I saw this firsthand.

    19:17-19:20

Years ago, we were babysitting a bunch of kids at our house.

    19:20-19:23

Our kids and a bunch of other kids at our house.

    19:23-19:26

And I remember Erin, she worked all day.

    19:27-19:28

She got all these snacks prepared.

    19:28-19:32

She had these little styrofoam bowls, you know what I'm talking about, and cleared off the coffee table.

    19:33-19:44

and she just had like this whole spread on the coffee table of all these bowls and all these snacks and Aaron worked so hard, spent hours getting all this stuff ready.

    19:46-19:47

And then the kids showed up.

    19:49-19:52

And church, it was like a swarm of locusts.

    19:53-19:53

    (roaring)

    19:54-19:57

They blew through there, my kids too, okay, my kids too.

    19:58-21:06

They blew through there and under two minutes snacks were gone and there were even some bites taken out of the styrofoam bowls. So Erin spent all day preparing and like gone. So Erin was going through the cupboards and she was just pulling everything she could out of the cupboards and the kids were mowing it down. Fruit snacks and pretzels and yams and paprika and she's just pulling everything out of the cupboards. And the kids collectively mowed it down. But the point is, the good stuff goes out first, right? And then the leftovers... that's why this head waiter was shocked. He goes, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second here. You brought out the good stuff at the end. That's really different." Then verse 11 says, "Now this, the first of his sons, Jesus did at Cana and and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

    21:07-21:28

After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and His brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there for a few days." So, Jesus made His miracle debut at a wedding, and He did it by turning water into wine.

    21:30-21:31

And I'm just going to be honest with you.

    21:33-21:34

That's not how I would have booked that.

    21:35-21:42

If I was like Jesus' public relations guy, you're about to perform your first miracle.

    21:43-21:50

You're about to show people again, you are the Son of God.

    21:51-21:52

You are God in the flesh.

    21:55-21:56

Here's how we're doing this, Jesus.

    21:56-22:07

What I would have done is I would have had at the temple during one of the peak, busy, feast season times, and I would have had Him transfigured at the temple.

    22:07-22:09

So everybody saw this is God.

    22:11-22:12

That's not how He did it.

    22:13-22:17

Or I thought maybe Jesus should have kicked off His ministry with the resurrection.

    22:18-22:27

Maybe start off with the cross and the resurrection, and think of how that would have got people's attention, but in His perfect wisdom, that's not how He did it.

    22:29-22:34

And see, with all of this that happened in the passage, to me the most profound statement is in verse 11.

    22:35-23:05

It says, "This the first of His signs Jesus did at Canaan and Galilee." Here's the profound phrase to me, "And manifested His glory." And I read this passage and I think, "This is how Jesus chose to manifest His glory?" Like this? Like water to wine? Like no fanfare?

    23:05-23:09

I mean, what does this manifest about His glory?

    23:11-23:12

Like I said, He did it quietly.

    23:13-23:16

He didn't announce it. There was no "Ta-da!" There was no big production.

    23:17-23:20

There was no "Wine by Jesus" banner put up.

    23:22-23:39

So I'm reading this this week, and I'm thinking, "The Scripture's clear, this is how He manifested His glory, but how does this manifest His glory?" In other words, what does this tell you about Jesus?

    23:39-23:42

Right? We want to know Jesus, so what does this tell you about Jesus?

    23:43-23:58

They're like, "Well, it tells you that if you have a wedding, you should invite Jesus." And I thought, "Well, if Jesus was invited to a Pittsburgh wedding, would He bless the cookie table?" What does this tell us about Jesus?

    23:58-24:06

And the truth is, if you look closely, this miracle gives us some life-changing truths about Jesus Christ.

    24:06-24:11

Jesus spoke so much about who He is through this miracle.

    24:12-24:13

    Let's look at it.

    24:14-24:24

So on your outline, "Manifesting His glory, what Jesus wants us to know from His first miracle." Here's the first thing that we see.

    24:25-24:32

Number one, jot this down, "Jesus cares about what you care about." Jesus cares about what you care about.

    24:33-24:37

And this miracle is really different than the other miracles in the Bible.

    24:37-24:38

    It just is.

    24:39-24:49

I mean, every other miracle that Scripture records has some huge personal benefit for a person or a group of people, like healing, right? That's a big one.

    24:50-24:53

The blind, the deaf, the lame, the bleeding, the leprous.

    24:56-24:57

    Huge personal benefit, right?

    24:57-25:03

Or driving out evil spirits, or raising the dead, or feeding the multitudes.

    25:05-25:11

I mean, those miracles really changed people's lives.

    25:11-25:13

    And here...

    25:14-25:17

I mean, was it really necessary that He do this?

    25:19-25:27

I mean, even miracles like Jesus walking on the water, I mean, at least that miracle had a visible wow factor to it because people actually saw it.

    25:29-25:32

But these people at this wedding weren't dying of thirst.

    25:33-25:40

And really, this miracle just boiled down to Jesus was sort of protecting a groom from major embarrassment.

    25:43-25:44

    And that is glorious.

    25:45-25:46

    Why?

    25:47-25:53

Because it shows that Jesus cares about what you care about.

    25:55-25:58

Sometimes we think Jesus only cares about the big things.

    26:00-26:03

Sometimes we think we should only pray about big things, right?

    26:05-26:07

Praying for my friends who are fighting cancer.

    26:09-26:12

Praying for my friends who have lost loved ones and are grieving.

    26:14-26:19

Praying for the unsaved to come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    26:19-26:21

    Those are big things.

    26:21-26:24

And does Jesus care about that stuff? Yes, He does.

    26:24-26:26

He absolutely cares about that stuff.

    26:26-26:32

But Jesus reminded us many times that He cares about everything that we care about.

    26:35-26:36

I think sometimes we need to be reminded of that.

    26:37-26:39

Here's how Jesus said it in Matthew 10.

    26:41-26:44

Jesus said, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?

    26:46-26:51

And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your father." I love this next statement.

    26:51-27:03

And he says, "But even the hairs on your head are all numbered." Granted, it's a lot easier for God to count some people's hairs than others, because some have less.

    27:04-27:07

But the point is this, how many hairs do you have on your head?

    27:08-27:11

That's the most insignificant fact about you, right?

    27:12-27:13

Even if you knew that number, who cares?

    27:13-27:15

Are you impressing your friends with that?

    27:15-27:16

    Putting it on social media?

    27:16-27:19

Like, "Hey, guess how many hairs I have on my head?" Nobody cares. Why? Because it's not important.

    27:22-27:23

    But it's important to God.

    27:24-27:33

He loves you and knows you and cares about you that much that He knows the most insignificant fact about you.

    27:35-27:44

Jesus said, "Fear not, therefore you are of more value than many sparrows." Like, you know, God cares about a bird.

    27:44-27:45

How much more do you think He cares about you?

    27:47-27:52

Same way, Luke 11, we're not going to turn there, but just to paraphrase, Jesus was illustrating the power of prayer.

    27:52-27:57

So to illustrate the power of prayer, He told the story of a man who wanted to borrow a snack for his friend.

    27:58-28:07

And the application wasn't, "Hey, hey, hey, don't bother God with that unimportant stuff." The application was actually the opposite.

    28:07-28:12

He said, "Hey, hey, hey, shamelessly bring all your requests to God because He cares about that stuff.

    28:12-28:14

    He cares. He cares.

    28:15-28:17

He cares at work, out of wine at the wedding.

    28:17-28:21

He cares that you don't have Pop-Tarts for your buddy or whatever.

    28:22-28:23

    He cares about that stuff.

    28:25-28:27

Those little things that you're dealing with.

    28:28-28:29

See, Jesus wants you to bring those too.

    28:32-28:35

Things like, "I really like this new position at work.

    28:35-28:39

I mean, my job's good, but I was really hoping to get this new position.

    28:41-28:47

I've actually had people tell me, I feel like I don't want to bother God with that stuff.

    28:47-28:49

Really, do you think God is bothered?

    28:50-28:52

Do you think He's worn out with you talking to Him?

    28:52-28:52

    No.

    28:53-28:54

    Just bring it. Bring it.

    28:55-28:57

    My kid needs potty trained.

    28:58-28:59

    Take it to God.

    29:01-29:06

I want my garden to grow, or Lord, give me another 50,000 miles out of this car.

    29:07-29:14

Whatever, bring it, because this story about the wine tells us that if you care about it, Jesus cares about it.

    29:16-29:21

Number two, Jesus turns ordinary things into extraordinary things.

    29:24-29:25

    That's like Jesus' specialty, right?

    29:25-29:28

He takes ordinary things and makes them extraordinary.

    29:30-29:33

And how did that happen at this event?

    29:35-29:46

It really kind of started when Jesus' mother said in verse 5, "Just do whatever He tells you." In other words, listen, somebody needs to hear this today.

    29:48-29:51

In other words, Mary was saying, "Just put it in Jesus' hands.

    29:52-29:57

Just let Him deal with it." Mary didn't know what He was going to do.

    29:59-30:03

And you realize we're in that position every moment of every day in our lives.

    30:04-30:12

That we have this need, big or small, whatever it is, and we don't know what God's going to do, but the advice is the same.

    30:12-30:17

put it in His hands, because when He has something in His hands, He's going to do something awesome with it.

    30:17-30:26

I don't know what, but you can be sure, if it's in Jesus' hands, He's going to do something better than any idea that we could have come up with.

    30:27-30:27

He's going to make it better.

    30:30-30:31

So just put it in His hands.

    30:33-30:37

This is what Jesus does to everyone who comes to Him.

    30:38-30:42

You come to Jesus as a weak and hopeless sinner.

    30:42-30:43

    That's ordinary. Those are everywhere.

    30:45-30:48

And He transforms you into an eternal child of God.

    30:49-30:51

He takes ordinary and makes it extraordinary.

    30:54-31:02

With every wedding, when God brings two people together, He takes two ordinary people and He makes something extraordinary.

    31:02-31:02

    Two become one.

    31:05-31:14

When things are given over to Jesus, He transforms them in inexplicable and glorious ways.

    31:15-31:23

He took the jugs that they used to dip their hands and provided the best wine anybody ever tasted.

    31:25-31:31

The question for you, for me, what do you need to put in Jesus' hands today?

    31:33-31:37

What is it in your life that you need to hand over to Him?

    31:40-31:41

You've got to commend Mary here.

    31:43-31:47

When she was like, "Just do whatever He tells you." She could have just tried to figure it out.

    31:51-31:54

Like, "I'll go in the kitchen and I'll whip up something." Right, ladies?

    31:55-31:56

    "I'll whip up something.

    31:56-31:59

It won't be wine, but I'll figure out something.

    32:00-32:05

the wedding guests will be drinking gravy or something, but I'll figure out something.

    32:06-32:14

Or let me pull my resources and see if there's something that I'm able to do to try to..." She didn't do any of that.

    32:15-32:16

She's like, "I'm just going to...

    32:16-32:18

    I'm just going to...

    32:18-32:20

Hey, hand it over to Jesus.

    32:20-32:21

Just do whatever He tells you.

    32:21-32:26

I'm out." And I think that's advice that we all need to take.

    32:29-32:29

    Your children?

    32:31-32:32

    Hand them over to Jesus.

    32:34-32:36

This health thing that you've been dealing with?

    32:38-32:39

    Hand it over to Jesus.

    32:41-32:46

That situation at work that has been frustrating you for like the last forever months?

    32:47-32:48

    Hand it over to Jesus.

    32:50-32:54

You take ordinary things and you transform them, so I'm handing this over to you.

    32:55-32:56

I'm done trying to fix it myself.

    32:57-33:01

it is yourself that you need to hand over to Jesus to say, "I'm done trying things my way.

    33:02-33:04

I'm done trying to do things in my own power.

    33:04-33:08

I'm done trying to use my own intellect and creativity because it's not getting me anywhere.

    33:09-33:14

Jesus, it has to be You." Let's stop trying to fix things.

    33:15-33:16

Let's stop trying to figure it out.

    33:18-33:21

Hand it to Jesus. He turns ordinary things into extraordinary things.

    33:22-33:28

And finally, these are all ways that Jesus is manifesting His glory.

    33:28-33:29

He cares about what you care about.

    33:30-33:32

    He transforms ordinary into extraordinary.

    33:33-33:36

Finally, Jesus saves the best for last.

    33:38-33:46

Again, the master of the feast was astonished that the best was saved for last, and that's a principle that the Lord wants us to get nailed down.

    33:48-33:49

    Think about this.

    33:51-33:53

Did Jesus know that they were going to run out of wine?

    33:54-33:55

Do you think He knew that?

    33:56-33:57

I am 100% convinced He knew that.

    33:58-33:59

Based on what we studied last week, right?

    34:00-34:02

He knew the disciples before He even met them.

    34:02-34:03

Or they met Him, I mean.

    34:04-34:05

You know what I mean, right?

    34:05-34:05

    You know what I mean?

    34:06-34:07

    Okay, thank you.

    34:07-34:10

He knew them when they were introduced to Him.

    34:10-34:13

So do you think He knew what was going...

    34:13-34:15

Do you think He knew they were going to run out of wine?

    34:15-34:16

    He knew all of this.

    34:19-34:39

And I'm like, "Well, if he knew that, why didn't he just turn the water into wine first?" And say, "Here you go! This will save any tension or stress that you might have." And I believe he's illustrating a glorious truth.

    34:41-34:44

You've heard it said that good things come to those who wait, right?

    34:47-34:50

I think Jesus is doing this one way better.

    34:52-34:55

The best things come to those who wait on Him.

    34:57-35:03

If you think about it, you know the devil, he offers the best first. You know that?

    35:04-35:12

Actually, to be clear, the devil deceives you by offering you what looks like the best first.

    35:14-35:17

Satan dangles that in front of you to say, "Look, this looks like the best.

    35:18-35:19

    "This is the easiest.

    35:19-35:25

"This is the thing that'll benefit you now, "so you should go after it because it benefits you now." Right?

    35:25-35:27

Give in to that sexual temptation now.

    35:30-35:33

Go into debt now to get that thing that you want now.

    35:35-35:36

    Be lazy now.

    35:37-35:40

Take this drug to feel good now.

    35:42-35:46

Just do whatever you wanna do, whatever's gonna make you feel good, whatever's going to benefit you now.

    35:47-35:48

    That's how the devil works.

    35:49-35:50

    But here's the catch.

    35:52-35:55

He never shows you the path of where that's going to take you.

    35:57-36:03

The devil never explains to you how that's going to play out when you subscribe to this philosophy.

    36:04-36:06

He never shows you the end.

    36:07-36:09

He just shows you the enticing next step.

    36:11-36:14

Give in to that sexual temptation now.

    36:14-36:24

He doesn't show you the destruction that's going to come on the homes of the relationships that are destroyed by giving in now.

    36:26-36:27

He's not going to tell you that part.

    36:29-36:32

Or go into debt now to get that thing you want now.

    36:33-36:42

He's not going to show you those credit card bills that are piling up that are going to bury you and you're like, "How did I get in this financial mess?" He's not going to show you that.

    36:44-36:45

    Be lazy now.

    36:47-36:51

He's not going to show you fired from your job for being lazy.

    36:51-36:53

We had a whole sermon on that a couple months ago.

    36:54-36:55

He's not going to show you that.

    36:57-37:18

Or, "Hey, take this drug to feel good now." He's not going to show you the horrors of addiction and the suffering and the financial suffering and the loss of life and all of the garbage that comes with that. He's not gonna show you that because you're gonna feel good now, right?

    37:21-37:50

You see, Jesus does the opposite. Jesus saves the best for last and He shows you what that path looks like to get to what's last. That's why Romans 8:18 He says, "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." What was Paul saying?

    37:53-37:55

He's saying, "I am convinced that Jesus saves the best for last.

    37:57-38:15

So this stuff that I'm dealing with in the meantime, it's all good." We just spent a whole year in Revelation, And if there's one big takeaway from that entire series, I think it's the very thing that Jesus introduced to us at this wedding.

    38:17-38:18

And that is, He saves the best for last.

    38:20-38:23

Are you willing to wait on the Lord to receive what He offers?

    38:25-38:31

Are you going to latch on to this destructive, low-hanging fruit that the devil's enticing you?

    38:34-38:36

Jesus has a way of saving the best for last.

    38:37-38:44

So you know at first glance, this whole wedding in Cana, it just seems kind of random.

    38:46-38:51

And I think if we're honest to us at first, it seems like a really weird first miracle for Jesus.

    38:53-38:54

But church, I want you to look closer.

    38:56-39:02

In manifesting His glory, Jesus says, Listen, I care about that thing that you care about.

    39:04-39:19

Jesus is saying, "Listen, I want you to know My transforming power." Jesus wants you to know the glorious hope that He promises when people wait on Him.

    39:21-39:27

So like the disciples, let's walk away from this wedding, letting it sink in.

    39:29-39:39

And like them, you'll find that you believe in Jesus, you know Jesus in a way that changes your life.

    39:40-39:41

Will you pray with me, please?

    39:43-39:48

Father in Heaven, Your wisdom is astounding.

    39:50-39:51

    Utterly astounding.

    39:53-39:59

That Your Son would choose to manifest His glory in such a profound way.

    40:02-40:07

Father, I pray simply today that this passage is an encouragement for Your people.

    40:09-40:12

For those of us who have accused You of not caring.

    40:14-40:25

For those of us who have tried to take matters into our own hands, or have been tempted to take the thing and it's going to make us feel good in the moment.

    40:28-40:30

Father, teach us what it means to wait on the Lord.

    40:32-40:42

Father, for anyone here who doesn't know You, I pray that these glorious truths will be transforming for them.

    40:44-40:48

Your Word tells us that it is Your kindness that leads to repentance.

    40:51-41:06

This passage so clearly shows us the kind of compassionate and merciful and loving, creative, thoughtful God that You are.

    41:08-41:17

Thank You for manifesting Your glory and letting us see it through Your Word.

    41:19-41:22

We praise You in Jesus' glorious name, Amen.

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think Jesus answered His mother how He did (John 2:4), but then helped her anyways?

  3. Why do you think this was chosen as Jesus’ first miracle? What does this tell you about the compassion of Jesus, and how He views “minor” things?

  4. If this was the debut miracle, why didn’t Jesus make this more of a “show”/production? Why do you think He did this so “quietly”?

Knowing Jesus - Making Him Known

Introduction:

Andrew / Simon Peter
Philip / Nathanael

Genesis 32 | Genesis 28 - A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD; make straight in the desert a highway for our God."

The Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    00:07-00:23

In the first 18 verses of chapter 1, we saw the prologue, "Jesus has made Himself known." And in verses 19-34, we saw the preaching of John the Baptist, who told us that we need to prepare ourselves to know Him.

    00:25-00:39

Today, the title of the message is "Knowing Jesus, Making Him Known." Many years ago, when I was in Bible college, in a psychology class, I got to know the professor pretty well.

    00:40-00:50

He was taking attendance, and he was calling out people's names, and they were saying, "Here..." But when he got to my name, he just kind of glanced up and saw me, and just kept moving on.

    00:50-01:11

Well, the guy that was sitting beside me didn't know that the professor knew me, and didn't see that he looked up and saw me, all the guy beside me saw was the professor called my name, and nobody said "here." So this guy assumed that Jeff Miller wasn't in the classroom.

    01:12-01:19

So when the professor called my name, this guy leaned over to me, and he had no idea who I was.

    01:19-01:49

And he said, "Jeff Miller?" He goes, "Who is that? I heard somebody talking about him. Who is Jeff Miller?" And this guy was totally serious. And I thought, "Oh, this is going to be fun." So I said, "Oh, you don't know who Jeff Miller is?" "No, no, no. Who is that?" I said, "I'm going to tell you something about Jeff Miller. The man is the biggest jerk I've ever met in my life." And the guy was like, "Really?" And I said, "To be honest with you, I can't even stand looking at his face.

    01:49-01:51

    He just makes me sick.

    01:52-01:58

And this guy's eyes got huge." "Really?" And I said, "Well, you know what? I'm sorry.

    02:00-02:35

I shouldn't be speaking ill of someone sitting in a Bible college class." And right now you're thinking, "No, actually, Pastor Jeff, you shouldn't be lying to people sitting in a Bible college class." And you're like, "Well, did you ever tell him?" "Nah. No, I didn't." Now, in my defense, I was going to tell him, but he left the school shortly thereafter, and I never got the opportunity, but to this day I have to wonder if he left the school because of this conversation.

    02:35-02:41

I have to wonder if he thought to himself, "I don't want to go to a Bible college where they talk about other students that way.

    02:42-02:51

Well, speaking of introductions, in this passage we're looking at today, the first disciples get to know Jesus Christ.

    02:52-03:05

But here's the thing, unlike this guy that sat beside me in Bible College, Jesus Christ already perfectly knew these people who were just coming to know Him.

    03:05-03:12

So this passage has two sections, Andrew and Peter are in the first section, that's verses 35-42.

    03:13-03:18

And the second section revolves around Philip and Nathaniel, that's verses 43-51.

    03:18-03:24

Alright? So let's look at the first section. This is Andrew and Simon Peter, if you're taking notes.

    03:24-03:31

Look at verse 35. It says, "The next day again, John" - that's John the Baptist - "was standing with two of his disciples.

    03:32-03:43

And he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

    03:44-03:45

Stop right there. Which two disciples?

    03:46-03:48

Well, one of them is Andrew, we find out in verse 40.

    03:49-03:53

The other one is probably John the Apostle who wrote this gospel.

    03:54-03:55

Why do I think it's him?

    03:56-04:04

Well, you're going to see in this exchange, there's a lot of detail and information given it had to have been somebody that was right there and saw it.

    04:04-04:06

So I think John the Apostle was the other one here.

    04:08-04:25

Verse 38, "Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, 'What are you seeking?' And they said to him, 'Rabbi,'" which means teacher, "'where are you staying?'" Now these are the first words of Jesus in John.

    04:26-04:28

You might want to underline this in your Bible.

    04:28-04:45

The first thing recorded from the mouth of our Lord in the Gospel of John is this question, "What are you seeking?" That's a profound question. Notice Jesus didn't say, "Who are you seeking?" That would have been an easy question to answer, right?

    04:45-04:47

"Who are you seeking?" And they just pointed to Jesus.

    04:48-04:52

"I'm looking for you." But that's not what Jesus asked.

    04:53-04:58

He asked, "What are you seeking?" In other words, what are you after?

    04:59-05:00

    What's your motive?

    05:01-05:02

    What a great question.

    05:03-05:08

Imagine if Jesus Christ showed up at our church, here physically, personally today.

    05:09-05:13

He walked right up to you, and I introduce you, and he already knows you.

    05:14-05:23

But he asked you, "Mike, what are you seeking?" Or he comes over to you and he says, "Ryan, what is it that you're after in church this morning?

    05:23-05:39

Why did you come to church? What is it that you are here for?" Well, these disciples in the text, they had been following John the Baptist, so on some level they had some grasp at this point of the implications that Jesus is the Messiah.

    05:39-05:53

Hence their response. They said, "Rabbi," which means "teacher." It was also a sign of great respect. But they ask, "Where are you staying?" They weren't just looking for an introduction, they were wanting to know Him.

    05:54-06:12

In other words, they were like, "Where are you staying because we are going with you?" Verse 39, "He said to them, 'Come and you will see.' So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

    06:13-06:18

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

    06:18-06:28

He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" which means Christ. Stop right there for a second.

    06:28-07:47

Here Andrew's introduced and notice he's called Simon Peter's brother. I bet he heard that all his life. "Oh yeah, Peter, your brother Peter, he was the one that spoke at Pentecost, right? And 3,000 people got saved. Oh, you're Peter's brother oh yeah yeah Peter who who spoke at the Jerusalem Council and made your turning point for the church and Acts 15 kind of stuff oh you're his brother Oh Peter who wrote first and second Peter oh you're Peter's brother I bet you Andrew heard that a lot but you have to notice that Andrew was called to be a that came up. If in all the discussion about Pentecost and the Jerusalem Council and writing books of the Bible and all of those things, if Andrew says, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, Simon, you know what? That might all be true, but Jesus called me first." Well, he went and found Simon, his brother. As soon as he met Jesus, notice he says, "We have found the Messiah," which means Christ, and I've shared with you before, Christ is not Jesus' last name. Okay? Christ is a title. Messiah is a title.

    07:47-08:37

Messiah is the Hebrew word and Christ is the Greek word. It literally means the anointed one. It's God's way of saying, "This is the one that I've been talking about throughout all of the scriptures." That's what the Christ means, the Messiah, the anointed one of God. Notice he, Andrew tells Simon that they found this Messiah, but look at verse 42, it says he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas," which means Peter. Notice Andrew brought Simon to Jesus, but Jesus again already knew who Simon was, but also note this, Jesus also knew what Simon would become.

    08:38-09:33

Again, a couple translations of words here. Cephas is the Aramaic word, Peter is the Greek word, and both words mean rock. And Jesus says, "Oh, you're Simon now, but eventually you're going to be the rock." What's that all about? Well, Matthew chapter 16 this is a whole nother sermon just gonna give you the background here quickly in Matthew 16 Peter made the great confession when Jesus said who do people say that I am Peter said I believe that you're the Christ you're the Son of the Living God and in response to Peter's confession Jesus replied on this rock I will build my church again there's a whole lot to talk about here but here's the short version the church is built on the foundation of people who, like Peter, confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

    09:34-09:42

Something that we see in this passage very clearly is that Jesus takes you as you are, and He changes you into what He wants you to be.

    09:43-09:44

    Isn't that great news?

    09:45-09:48

Isn't that great news that Jesus doesn't say, "Get your act together.

    09:49-10:02

Someday if you're great enough, if you're good enough, if you're worthy enough, you can be a follower of mine." Jesus takes you exactly as you are, and He knows exactly what He's going to make you to be.

    10:02-10:05

Moving on, that's the first exchange. Now let's look at the second.

    10:05-10:08

This is with Philip and Nathaniel. Pick up in verse 43.

    10:09-10:12

It says, "The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

    10:12-10:22

He found Philip and said to him, 'Follow me.' Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter." Now there's not much detail given here.

    10:22-10:43

reading this passage you can have a whole lot of questions but there's one very key important detail that is given. Note this, in verse 43 it says that Jesus found Philip. You see that in the text? It's not vice versa. It wasn't that Philip was looking for Jesus. It says very clearly that Jesus found Philip. Why?

    10:44-10:51

Well I think it tells us right here in the text. Look at the first sentence in verse It says the next day, Jesus decided to go.

    10:52-11:01

So putting it all together as the Bible presents itself, apparently it says that Jesus wanted to go to Galilee in order to find Philip.

    11:02-11:03

That just speaks to his sovereignty.

    11:03-11:04

    Jesus had a plan here.

    11:05-11:07

Look at verse 45 and 46.

    11:08-11:33

"Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses and the law, And also the prophets wrote, "Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathaniel said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Nathaniel is also known as Bartholomew in the other Gospels.

    11:34-11:50

And Philip says, "Nathaniel, we found him! The one that Moses and the prophets promised would come!" talking about Genesis 3.15, Deuteronomy 18.15, Isaiah 53, Daniel 7, all through the Psalms, God promised that His Messiah was going to come.

    11:51-12:05

Philip says, "Nathaniel, this is the one that God was talking about." Now you have to understand, this was a pretty dramatic lead-in, because what followed probably sounded lame in the moment to Nathaniel.

    12:05-12:10

He's like, "We found the one that the Scriptures talk about!

    12:10-12:24

Jesus of Nazareth, Son of Joseph! Now when we hear that, we have lofty, exalted thoughts." Rightly so, because we're a little more familiar with this concept that Jesus Christ, the Son of Joseph, is the Messiah.

    12:25-12:30

But you have to try to hear this the way that Nathaniel would have heard it, because he didn't have all this information yet.

    12:30-12:37

When Nathaniel heard this, it was an awfully big build-up and probably a very lame-sounding payoff.

    12:38-12:39

What do I mean by that?

    12:39-12:45

Well, Philip says, "It's Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Joseph was a nobody.

    12:46-12:49

And I mean that purely in human, earthly terms.

    12:50-12:52

What I mean is Joseph wasn't famous.

    12:53-12:55

And the other thing is Nazareth was a hated town.

    12:56-13:23

It just had a bad reputation and people in general Hated the town of Nazareth. So to try to put it in a modern context It would be like if I came to you and I said hey You're not gonna believe this but I found this man who is going to change the world This man is going to forever transform your life And this man is forever going to transform the lives of every single person he ever encounters and you're like who is it?

    13:23-13:37

And I say, "It's Hank Cunningham from Cleveland!" And you would rightly ask, "Can anything good come from Cleveland?" You kind of get this exchange here between Philip and Nathaniel.

    13:38-13:57

But Philip's like, "Hey, come and see. We'll talk about that more in a second." Look at verse 47, "Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said of him, 'Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit.'" This is actually a very clever play on words, Jesus' statement to Nathanael.

    13:58-14:03

You see, back in Genesis 32, Jacob was renamed Israel.

    14:04-14:08

And Israel eventually became the name of the Jewish nation, right?

    14:09-14:24

But the name Jacob, the former name, literally means "deceiver." So Jesus was saying, "An Israelite without deceit." In other words, Jesus was saying to Nathaniel, "You are all Israel and no Jacob.

    14:25-14:35

There's nothing phony about you. There's nothing fake about you." In verse 48, "Nathaniel said to him, 'How do you know me?'" That would have been my question too.

    14:36-14:50

"Jesus answered him, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.'" Jesus said, "I saw you when you were under the fig tree." Like, what's the significance of the fig tree? What does that mean?

    14:50-14:57

I don't know. I did a lot of reading last week, read from a lot of scholars and commentators and famous preachers.

    14:58-15:04

Some people say, "Well, you know, Nathaniel was under the fig tree praying for the Messiah to come.

    15:04-15:05

He was under the fig tree meditating on Scripture.

    15:06-15:15

He was under the fig tree, you know, this, that, or the other." And we don't know, but whatever was happening under the fig tree, Philip knew what that was.

    15:16-15:17

You see, and all of a sudden the lights went on.

    15:18-15:21

    Philip instantly made that connection.

    15:21-15:28

When Jesus mentioned the fig tree, like, "Oh, he knows. He knows something." And we know he's convinced.

    15:28-15:32

Look at verse 49, "Nathanael answered him, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God.

    15:32-15:35

You are the King of Israel.'" Well, I'm convinced.

    15:36-15:42

Verse 50, Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?

    15:43-16:05

You will see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." Jesus said, "If you're convinced because I knew what was happening with you and the fig tree, you're going to see even greater things.

    16:05-16:11

You're gonna see heaven open, you're gonna see angels, they're gonna be ascending and descending, and like, what's that all about?

    16:11-16:14

Well, that's another call back to Jacob.

    16:15-16:22

Back in Genesis 28, Jacob saw a vision and a dream of a ladder or a staircase, and there were angels going up and down.

    16:23-16:29

And God said to Jacob, "I am with you, and I will keep you.

    16:30-16:38

"I will fulfill my promises to you." And Jacob awoke from that dream, and he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place." And I did not know it.

    16:39-16:45

I think Jesus was doing a callback to that story by the statement that he made in verse 51.

    16:46-16:50

In essence, I believe Jesus was saying, "Nathanael, you're going to see my ministry.

    16:52-16:53

"You're going to watch what happens.

    16:54-17:25

"You're going to hear what I say." And then, in three years, when the dust settles, and the crowds disperse, and I've been taken off the cross, and I've raised from the dead, and the tomb is empty, and I appear before you, resurrected, Nathaniel, like Jacob, you're going to say, "Surely the Lord is in this place." And I did not know it.

    17:25-17:32

So, in this account, we see the first disciples coming to know Jesus to discover that He already knew them.

    17:33-17:51

You know, as kids we sang, "Jesus loves me, this I know," but we can also rightly sing, "Jesus knows me, this I love." Because there's something else very obvious in this passage, aside from the knowledge that Jesus had of these people.

    17:52-18:02

Something you have to note in this passage, everyone in this chapter comes to know Jesus Christ because of someone else.

    18:02-18:09

John the Baptist tells Andrew, who tells Peter, and Jesus himself calls Phil, who tells Nathaniel.

    18:10-18:18

And you have to see the first thing that these disciples did as all disciples of Jesus are called to do is to make him known.

    18:19-18:25

So as we wrap up, the question we're going to answer is this, how do I make Jesus known?

    18:26-18:28

I want you to jot these three things down.

    18:28-18:29

How do I make Jesus known?

    18:29-18:33

Number one, I make Jesus known through exaltation.

    18:34-18:36

I make Jesus known through exaltation.

    18:36-18:37

What do you mean by that?

    18:37-18:42

Well, Andrew spent time with Jesus, and that's what motivated him to go get his brother.

    18:43-18:48

Philip spent time with Jesus, and that's what motivated him to go find Nathaniel.

    18:48-18:53

And in both of these cases, you see nothing mechanical or forced or canned.

    18:53-18:58

It was purely a reaction to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

    18:59-19:05

The degree that you are following Jesus Christ is the degree that you are witnessing for Jesus Christ.

    19:06-19:12

There are so many classes and seminars and books on evangelism.

    19:13-19:14

    Remember evangelism explosion?

    19:15-19:17

How many people remember evangelism explosion?

    19:18-19:30

You have your little survey, and I'm taking a survey about religion, and I'd just like to ask you a few questions, and that's sort of how we approach the subject and get people the gospel, and you remember that?

    19:31-20:08

I personally have taught many classes and led seminars, and here's the thing with all of these evangelism teaching tools, they really only benefit the people who want to witness. If you go into that, witnessing isn't really your thing. Witnessing probably isn't going to be your thing when you leave. But, by far, the best way to be the best witness for Jesus Christ is to be walking with Christ yourself. That makes you the best evangelist.

    20:08-21:08

I saw a video years ago, I think it was a Ray Comfort sharing the gospel on the street kind of thing, but they called this guy over and said, "Hey, would you be willing to give this gospel track to a stranger?" And the guy's like, "No, I don't really feel comfortable, you know, giving gospel tracks to strangers. I don't really feel comfortable doing that." And they said, "Well, what if I gave you $20? Would you do it for $20?" And they held the cash up. He goes, "Yeah, I'll do it for $20." So he grabs the track and runs over to the first girl he sees walking by. He goes, "Hey, I have this little book. I'd like you to check it out, read it, and just a little something for you and hey here you go have a nice day and he comes back and collects his $20. Well the host of this little street level experiment said to the man, they said you know Jesus said you love God or you love money. How does it make you feel knowing that you wouldn't do it because you wouldn't share the gospel because Jesus told you to but you were willing to do it for money?

    21:09-22:05

wah-wah, right? That might make you feel like a jerk, but will that really motivate you to reach out to someone with the gospel? I'll tell you what's going to make someone want to reach out to others with the gospel. You let that guy be crushed by the weight of his sin and let him experience a harsh reality of life, a place of desperation where he cries out to God and experiences grace and love and the transforming power of Jesus and the beautiful presence of the Holy Spirit and the peace and assurance he gives of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. That guy is going to go tell people about Jesus, because he He doesn't need any other motivation other than just knowing Jesus.

    22:06-22:12

Because when you know Jesus, that's more than enough motivation to be a witness for Christ.

    22:14-22:18

The degree that you are following Christ is the degree that you are witnessing for Christ.

    22:19-22:21

So number one, I make Jesus known through exaltation.

    22:21-22:23

Number two, I make Jesus known through proclamation.

    22:25-22:35

proclamation. Sometimes as Christians we throw around lame phrases that have no biblical basis but they like sound nice to us, you know what I'm talking about?

    22:35-22:40

You know what I mean? Here's one. I've heard people say this so many times.

    22:41-23:22

"Share the gospel, use words if necessary." You ever heard somebody say that? "Share the gospel and use words if necessary." What? Where is that written? I got one for you! "Share the gospel and use words!" I mean, what is this, lifestyle charades that we're trying to get people to guess? Like, "All right, I'm gonna do the motions, and you're gonna guess, okay, all right, all right, I'm gonna try to guess, I'm gonna try to guess, okay, okay, I'm gonna try to guess, okay care about me and I can't figure out what it is you're trying...

    23:23-23:33

I'm sorry, I give up. What was the answer?" And you're like, "Jesus Christ loves you and died for your sins, that was the answer!" Lifestyle Shreds doesn't do it.

    23:34-23:51

Listen, yes, yes, love people, yes, let your light shine before others, yes, yes, absolutely, but faith comes by hearing the Word of Christ, Romans 10:17. "If If someone is going to come to faith, it has to be by hearing.

    23:52-24:00

And Andrew and Philip, both in this passage, simply shared what they knew about Jesus.

    24:01-24:11

One of the hang-ups people have about witnessing, people say, "Well, what if they ask me a question I don't know?" Well, Andrew and Philip taught us that we don't need to have all the answers.

    24:12-24:12

    Think about it.

    24:13-24:45

one sense, Andrew and Philip knew very little about Jesus Christ, because this was only the beginning of Jesus' ministry. How many miracles have Andrew and Philip seen at this point? The answer is none. No miracles. They didn't see the cross, they didn't see the empty tomb, yet. They didn't see any of that. They didn't see the resurrected Christ, yet. They knew very little, but they knew enough. And was compelling and worth sharing.

    24:46-24:47

    So share what you know.

    24:48-24:52

If you know Jesus, you know enough to share with someone else.

    24:53-24:58

And you'll find that when you get the opportunity to talk about Jesus, you know more than you think you do.

    24:59-25:04

So make Jesus known through exaltation, your personal walk, it has to start there.

    25:05-25:07

    Make Jesus known through proclamation.

    25:07-25:10

Finally, I make Jesus known through invitation.

    25:11-25:13

Very clearly seen in the text.

    25:14-25:15

    Invitation.

    25:16-25:22

Another obstacle we face in witnessing that discourages some people from witnessing is dealing with skeptics.

    25:23-25:26

And I love how Philip handled the skepticism.

    25:26-25:27

    I love that.

    25:28-25:40

Remember, Nathaniel said, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Nathaniel was already sold on the fact that Jesus couldn't be the Messiah because there's no way anything good came from Nazareth.

    25:40-25:41

    So he was a skeptic.

    25:42-25:47

But notice that Philip didn't launch into some sermon or some apologetics course.

    25:47-25:48

Do you see that verse 46?

    25:49-25:55

Philip just simply said this, "Come and see, come and see." What if that's how we handled skepticism?

    25:56-26:04

If people were like, "Oh, Christians are all hypocrites." And we're like, "Hey, hey, come and see." Like, "Oh, all the churches do is ask for money.

    26:04-26:07

Come and see." I don't think Christianity really works.

    26:08-26:09

    Come and see.

    26:10-26:27

And I thought as I was preparing this, if only there was a place where people could be invited, where they could see transformed lives, where they would be loved, where they could experience God's presence and God's people, where they could come to know Jesus Christ personally.

    26:27-26:33

If only there was a place you could invite someone where they would see and experience all of that.

    26:33-26:35

Oh, if only there was a place.

    26:36-26:39

there is a place, and you're sitting in it.

    26:40-26:47

That's why, church, I have no problem inviting people to Harvest Bible Chapel, because I know what is in store for them when they come.

    26:48-26:52

They're going to be welcomed and loved by the best people on earth.

    26:53-26:58

They're going to come to know Jesus Christ, your passionate worship, and the proclamation of the Word of God.

    26:59-27:02

I know what happens here, so I want them to come.

    27:03-27:06

Inviting people to church is the easiest thing.

    27:06-27:09

Take one of these little yellow cards that we provide on the back table.

    27:09-27:14

It says, "I'm inviting you," on one side, and the other side has information about our church.

    27:15-27:25

And you just say to someone, "Hey, if you don't have a church home, "I would love for you to be my guest "at Harvest Bible Chapel," and give them the card.

    27:26-27:28

What is the absolute worst thing that could happen?

    27:29-27:34

The person says, "I don't want to come to your stupid church." That's okay.

    27:34-27:43

If somebody says something like that or reacts in that way, all you need to do is smile and say, "It's a standing invitation.

    27:44-27:48

If you decide to change your mind sometime, I'd love to have you come." That's it.

    27:50-27:58

Philip says to Nathaniel, "Come and see." Andrew, same with Simon Peter, "Come and see." He brought Simon to Jesus.

    27:59-28:02

He just grabbed him and he was like, "You have to meet him!

    28:02-28:08

Come and see. Come and see." And Andrew is a great inspiration to all of us in witnessing.

    28:09-28:10

I mean, think about Andrew for a second.

    28:12-28:19

You remember how God used Peter to save 3,000 of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2?

    28:20-28:28

Well, Peter wouldn't have been there and he wouldn't have given that sermon If his brother Andrew didn't introduce him to Jesus first.

    28:29-28:31

So hey, maybe you aren't the next Simon Peter.

    28:33-28:34

But maybe you are the next Andrew.

    28:35-28:39

Maybe God is going to use you to reach the next Simon Peter.

    28:40-28:41

    Like where would that happen?

    28:42-28:45

Well, maybe it's one of your children you're discipling in your home.

    28:46-28:49

Maybe it's one of the children you're discipling in Harvest Kids.

    28:50-28:51

Maybe it's in your small group.

    28:51-28:52

    Maybe it's in your workplace.

    28:52-28:53

    Maybe it's in your neighborhood.

    28:54-29:03

Who knows how God is going to make an impact for eternity, not only through you, but maybe someone He reaches through you.

    29:04-29:19

Your job is simply to make Him known, to exalt Jesus Christ, proclaim His name, and invite people to come and experience His power with His people.

    29:19-29:20

    Let's pray.

    29:21-29:23

Father in heaven, we come before you today.

    29:23-29:28

We thank you for the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    29:28-29:35

And Father, it is my prayer simply today for this church, and for those who are going to be listening to this online later.

    29:37-29:50

It's my prayer, Father, that you would so consume us with your love and mercy and the power of the gospel and the relationship that you've provided through Jesus Christ.

    29:50-30:10

I pray, Father, that you would so consume us with that, that reaching out with the gospel, whether it's sharing the good news or inviting people to church or whatever, I just pray, Father, that is such a natural thing for us, because it's an outpouring of what you're already pouring into us.

    30:11-30:18

Father, bring us to a place of just genuine enthusiasm for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    30:19-30:25

Father, we thank you that you've chosen to use people to carry out the work of the Great Commission.

    30:25-30:31

And Father, find us faithful in being ambassadors for Christ, as your word has called us.

    30:31-30:33

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  • Pastor Jeff:

    01:11-01:13

Come on up, Mike and Brian.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:13-01:18

For those of you who maybe are new around here, we are an elder-run congregation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:19-01:26

And this is Darren Keller and Rich Sprunk and Jay Knauer, and they've been faithfully serving Harvest Bible Chapel for years.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:26-01:29

Jay and Darren were among our first class of elders.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:29-01:31

So they've been - how many years has that been?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:33-01:33

    You don't count years?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:35-01:37

Birthdays must be a real treat at your house.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:40-01:46

Well, today we are going to be installing and praying over two more men.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:46-01:49

This is Mike Martin and, oh, Brian, there you are.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:49-01:49

    I am.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:50-01:51

    Sneaking up on me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:51-01:53

He was chosen purely for his ninja-like abilities.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:54-01:55

You're probably wondering where is it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:57-02:07

Mike Martin and Brian Gagnon, and we certainly have appreciated getting to know you and seeing your wisdom and your service in the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:09-02:12

And Mike, I just appreciate you and Judy have such a heart to serve.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:13-02:18

Judy helps me every week back in guest reception, and Mike has stepped in.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:18-02:28

It might be quicker for me to list some of the areas of ministry where he hasn't stepped in, but especially in the prayer team ministry and with missions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:28-02:35

Mike has been such a great servant of the Lord and a great mentor to a lot of people in this church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:35-02:46

and Brian, you know how sometimes, when you meet somebody, you know how sometimes it takes you a while to get to know them before you like them?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:48-02:49

    (audience laughing)

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:50-02:51

    I liked you right away.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:53-02:54

That was not the case with you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:57-02:59

I had you sweating there for a minute, didn't I?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:59-03:01

I'm thinking, where is he going with this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:03-03:05

People say that every week when I get up to preach.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:08-03:16

Kidding aside, you and Shirley have demonstrated such a spiritual maturity and wisdom that was obvious from the very beginning.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:16-03:23

And I know what a huge impact the two of you had on our marriage class that we had this summer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:23-03:34

And here at Harvest Bible Chapel, elders are not so much selected are identified.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:35-03:41

Because Scripture gives the criteria of the type of man that should shepherd the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:41-03:48

And I'm going to ask you men, if you would please, I have a few words for the elders, but I'm going to ask you to sit in the front row for two reasons.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:48-03:50

    One is nobody ever is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:52-03:58

And the other reason is I want to share a few words about what it means to be an elder, and it'd just be a lot easier if I didn't have to do this the whole time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:00-04:11

And then we're going to call you back up But 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 give the qualifications for an elder.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:12-04:15

So again, they're more identified than selected.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:15-05:02

So, what we had done, especially this past year in our eldership as I sat down with Darren and Jay and Rich, we said, who are the men in our church demonstrate the qualities of an elder. And there were two men that immediately went to the top of that list that we started praying about, and they went through a long process, Brian and Mike did as the others did, but they went through a long process of applications and interviews and training and attending elders meetings to see what goes on. So you have to know that this isn't something that we were just like eeny meeny miny moe, hey I like you, you're good looking, you look good in a suit, you're an elder.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:02-05:10

This has been a very long process of really seeking the Lord and getting to see the character of these men.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:11-05:16

And I'm really excited for this church to have this caliber of leadership.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:18-05:22

But just a word for the elders here before we pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:23-05:26

This comes from 1 Peter 5.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:28-05:30

I just want to give you the elders' job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:30-05:32

And again, this isn't going to be a surprise to any of these guys.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:33-05:34

We've been talking about these things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:35-05:36

But this is the elders' job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:37-05:46

I want to read these verses and then very quickly just sort of list some of the things that the Bible calls an elder of the church to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:47-06:03

And Peter writes, "So I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory is going to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God that is among you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:04-06:05

    Exercising oversight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:05-06:07

Stop right there. That's number one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:07-06:09

First part of your job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:10-06:11

    Exercise oversight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:11-06:14

Or, we would say an elder shepherds God's people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:15-06:16

    Okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:17-06:30

You aren't being installed as dictators, as bosses, as some kind of CEO of the church I'm just going to keep people in line." You're a shepherd.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:33-06:36

That's what it means to exercise oversight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:38-06:42

And he gives the attitude as we read on in verse 2.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:42-06:59

He says, "Not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you, not for shameful gain, but eagerly." And that takes us to number two in my description, an elder not only shepherds God's people, but an elder has godly motives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:00-07:02

    An elder has godly motives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:02-07:06

And he gives two positives and two negatives here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:06-07:07

    Did you see that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:07-07:08

    Here's a negative.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:08-07:09

    Not under compulsion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:10-07:15

It wasn't like we're twisting these guys' arms like, "Brian, come on, man.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:16-07:16

I need you to do it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:17-07:18

If you don't do it, the church fails.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:18-07:21

If you don't do it, Jesus is disappointed in you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:21-07:24

Okay, I'll do it." it can't be under compulsion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:25-07:29

It can't be guilt trip or some obligation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:29-07:30

    It can't be that way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:30-07:35

He says, "Not under compulsion, but willingly." Like, yes, this is something that I want to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:38-07:40

He says, "As God would have you." And here's the second negative.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:40-07:45

He says, "Not for shameful gain." Yeah, you're not getting paid.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:46-07:47

    So that's not a motive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:49-07:52

But there's other gains that can be made through leadership, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:53-07:55

That's what Peter's talking about here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:55-07:59

He says you're not put in a position of leadership to take advantage of those under your care.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:01-08:02

    He says but eagerly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:02-08:03

    Eagerly!

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:04-08:05

    Not just willingly, but eagerly!

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:06-08:20

Not just, "I want to do this, but I really love and want to help lead this people!" The third part of the job description takes us to verse 3.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:20-08:25

He says, "Not domineering over those in your charge." An elder is gracious.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:27-08:28

    Not domineering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:30-08:34

Not that Gentile style that Jesus was talking about, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:34-08:44

Jesus said, "The rulers of the Gentiles, they lorded over them, but not so with you." Jesus said, "The greatest among you must be" what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:45-08:48

"A servant." An elder is gracious.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:49-08:54

Yes, this is the highest level of authority in the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:54-08:56

So according to Jesus, do you know what that means?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:56-09:00

The highest level of authority is also the highest level of servanthood, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:02-09:06

Yes, you are men of authority because you're men under authority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:07-09:11

And authority doesn't mean I'm the boss, you do what I say.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:12-09:17

Authority means God has called me to make decisions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:18-09:25

to bless and protect those that He has entrusted to me." That's authority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:26-09:28

That's authority in the home - men.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:28-09:31

That's the authority in the church - elders.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:33-09:40

Verse 3, he goes on, he says, "But being examples to the flock." That's the fourth part of your job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:41-09:41

    An elder is a model.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:42-09:44

    An elder is a model.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:46-09:59

Mike, when I told Mike that, he goes, "Yeah, I know that that's why you picked me, because of my good looks. I'm a model, right? I do my little turn on the catwalk." And no, that's not what we mean by model. It means you're an example.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:01-10:17

He says, "Be an example to the flock." Meaning, people should be looking to you as an elder to say, "This is what it looks like to follow Christ." Remember the Apostle Paul said, "Be imitators of me as I imitate Christ." That's your job. People should be looking to you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:17-10:19

You know, what does it look like to follow Jesus?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:19-10:25

These people who have recently come to Christ in our church, they're like, "Hey, I'm a baby Christian.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:25-10:28

What does it look like as a husband, as a father?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:28-10:31

What does it look like as a new believer?" They should be looking to you guys.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:32-10:37

Saying, "Okay, that's a model of what it means." Not perfect. None of us are perfect.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:38-10:50

But striving and pursuing and seeking Christ and worshiping Christ, walking with Christ, working for Christ, making worship a priority, making small group involvement a priority, making home a priority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:52-10:53

    An elder is a model.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:54-10:58

And then finally, an elder works for his shepherd.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:59-11:15

That's where Peter says, "And when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory." You are working for Jesus with an eye on eternity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:17-11:18

    That yes, you are shepherds.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:18-11:19

    We are shepherds.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:20-11:22

But we are shepherds under the Good Shepherd, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:23-11:28

So, it is Him whom we seek to please with the way that we shepherd this flock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:29-11:32

So I'm going to ask if you would come back up here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:33-11:35

And let's put Brian and Mike in the front.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:38-11:40

and the rest of us behind, and we're going to lay hands.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:41-11:43

And church, we want you to pray along with us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:43-11:47

And we want you to do something that we actually did in Thailand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:48-11:54

In Thailand, when Barnabas, our missionary, would say, "Let's pray," everybody prayed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:55-11:57

And you know that's not a problem for God, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:57-12:05

You realize at any time, at any moment, in the world, there are how many millions of people lifting up their voices to the Lord at the same time?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:05-12:07

He has no problem sorting that out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:07-12:09

And what a sign of unity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:09-12:13

What a sign of seeking the Lord together that we would pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:14-12:25

So I'm going to ask if we would pray and just lift these men up before the Lord and really all of our eldership and ask the Lord that we would honor Him with the way that we shepherd this church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:26-12:35

And then after a few moments of us all praying at the same time, I asked Rich if he would close us for the congregational prayer over the elders.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:36-12:36

    Alright?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:37-12:39

So will you pray with me, church?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:40-12:42

Father in Heaven, we just lift these men up to You.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:43-12:48

And we thank You so much for the leadership that You have provided this church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:48-12:53

Father, we need Your wisdom and guidance.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:54-12:58

And I thank You for the way that You have raised and prepared these men.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:59-13:01

I thank You, Father, for their wives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:02-13:04

We thank You, Father, for their families.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:04-13:07

We thank You, Father, for them coming into this knowing the commitment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:09-13:13

Father, we ask that they would shepherd with a pure motive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:14-13:17

We ask, Father, that they would shepherd with a servant's heart.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:18-13:22

That they would shepherd this church in the way that Christ has called.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:24-13:25

    Father, give us wisdom.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:26-13:27

    Guide us.

    Rich Sprunk:

    13:28-13:34

Our most gracious and loving Father, We thank you so very much for Mike and Brian.

    Rich Sprunk:

    13:35-13:42

Thank you for sending them our way to be ministers, to be stewards, and to be elders.

    Rich Sprunk:

    13:43-13:46

I pray, Father, You would continue to give them wisdom and discernment.

    Rich Sprunk:

    13:48-13:54

Give them compassionate and loving hearts that these qualities would abound in them more and more.

    Rich Sprunk:

    13:56-14:08

And that You would continue to make them Your faithful servants as they serve and steward the good deposit that You have given them.

    Rich Sprunk:

    14:10-14:12

We pray that You would continue to bless our congregation.

    Rich Sprunk:

    14:14-14:21

Father, You would unite our hearts and make us one mind, one spirit, one faith in our one Lord Jesus Christ.

    Rich Sprunk:

    14:23-14:25

And we ask these things in His great name.

    Rich Sprunk:

    14:26-14:26

    Amen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:26-14:27

    Amen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:28-14:28

    Amen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:30-14:31

    (applause)

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:38-14:39

    Leadership is servanthood.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:40-14:45

And our new elders' first act of being an elder is to serve you, the congregation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:46-14:47

They're going to serve the Lord's Supper.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:47-14:51

I'm going to ask Brian and Mike if you would take communion trays.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:51-14:56

And they are going to stand on either side of the middle aisles as the worship team leads the song.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:56-14:57

And here's what you're going to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:57-14:59

You're going to stand and worship.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:00-15:03

And you're going to come up and receive the Lord's Supper when you're ready.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:03-15:11

If you need to take some time to meditate, to pray, to reflect, maybe you just need a minute to worship before you come up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:12-15:16

When you're ready, you're going to come up the middle aisles and you're going to receive the Lord's Supper here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:17-15:17

Don't take it back to your seat.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:18-15:19

We're not all taking it together.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:19-15:21

You're going to receive the Lord's Supper here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:21-15:27

And then we ask you to return to your seat from the outside and we're going to continue to worship while we receive the Lord's Supper together.

John 1, we're in a series called "Knowing Jesus." And the Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    01:32-01:37

And last week we were in verses 1-18, which is really the prologue.

    01:38-01:46

And we discovered last week that the only way that we can know Jesus Christ is He has to make Himself known.

    01:46-01:48

And what did we find out about Jesus?

    01:49-01:52

Well, we found out that Jesus is God.

    01:52-01:53

    He came to give life.

    01:54-01:59

And He's full of grace and truth.

    02:01-02:02

    Are you there?

    02:02-02:04

John 1, we're going to be picking up in verse 19.

    02:05-02:06

    You're still turning there.

    02:08-02:09

    You have a minute.

    02:10-02:14

A few years ago, it was a Saturday morning.

    02:16-02:16

    All right?

    02:16-02:20

It was a very cold, wintry Saturday morning.

    02:21-02:28

And my wife said, "Hey, I need you to run to the bank." And I can't remember what business I needed to take care of at the bank.

    02:28-02:33

And you're going to find out here in a second why I forgot what the business was at the bank.

    02:35-02:45

But Erin said, "You know, you can just run through the drive-thru." Now again, this was a Saturday morning, the bank closed at 12, had to hurry up and get there before it closed.

    02:45-02:50

Okay, it's Saturday morning, I don't know how it is at your house, but I was like bumming out, right?

    02:50-02:55

But she's like, "Go to the bank." And when she said, "You can go to the drive-thru," do you know what I heard?

    02:56-03:00

Like oh, I only need to get dressed from the waist up then, right?

    03:02-03:11

I'm in my car and they're only going to see like the north part of me, so I can just be dressed like up top.

    03:13-03:14

    And that's what I did.

    03:16-03:26

On the bottom, I was wearing a pair of old gym shorts, and of course my pasty white wintry legs that looks like they've never seen the sun.

    03:28-03:32

And I had on this pair of winter boots.

    03:33-03:34

    Now, let's...

    03:36-03:37

    Don't get ahead of me.

    03:37-03:38

    Look at this picture here.

    03:38-03:41

Now, this is a Google image, okay?

    03:41-03:42

    I yanked this online.

    03:42-03:57

Okay, the pair that I had looked like they were on the final stages of leprosy and that somebody put them on fire and the fire was put out by a pack of rabid wolverines.

    03:58-03:59

    That's what mine looked like.

    04:00-04:04

They were ratty, dirty, tattered, disgusting.

    04:05-04:07

Okay, I hear you, some of you guys are laughing.

    04:07-04:15

You don't keep a pair of shoes like that by the door to take the dog out or, you know what I'm talking about, right, they're just the shoes that you just kinda slip on.

    04:16-04:18

Well, mine just so happened to be like those kind.

    04:18-04:21

But like I said, they were an abomination.

    04:23-04:26

But I'm like, but I'm going to the drive-thru, right?

    04:27-04:32

So, nobody's going to see this, only this, and I'm going to look great.

    04:33-04:35

And I went to the bank drive-through.

    04:37-04:41

And again, I can't remember what the business was that needed to be conducted.

    04:41-04:45

But I remember at the drive-through, the teller said, yeah, we're having some sort of a problem.

    04:45-04:45

    Can you come inside?

    04:49-04:53

I said, yes, I can come inside, because whatever needed to happen, needed to happen right then.

    04:53-04:55

I didn't have time to run home and finish getting dressed.

    04:56-04:58

Plus, that would have been an awkward conversation with the teller, right?

    04:58-04:59

    Can you come inside?

    04:59-05:04

Yeah, I can come inside in about a half hour.

    05:04-05:06

I gotta run home and finish getting dressed.

    05:08-05:11

No, that's not the conversation you wanna have.

    05:11-05:14

So I'm like, you know what, sometimes you just gotta take it like a man.

    05:16-05:28

So I went inside and was at the counter and the teller says, okay, I see here that she looked over the counter and she said, Why are you wearing that?

    05:31-05:32

    This is a true story.

    05:34-05:39

And I smiled and I said, well, I didn't think anybody was going to see me.

    05:41-05:52

Well whatever the issue was, she couldn't get it figured out so she had to call over like some manager and the manager comes over and she goes, oh yeah, I see the problem here.

    05:53-06:12

And the manager looks over the counter, and she goes, "What's up with them boots?" And I said, "I didn't think anyone was going to see me." So they're taking care of the banking business, and I'm standing there almost totally humiliated.

    06:14-06:16

And here's where it went into totally humiliated.

    06:17-06:18

I'm just kind of standing there.

    06:19-06:28

I turn around and standing behind me is my high school English teacher, Mrs. Lucy Dollar.

    06:31-06:33

And I said, "Mrs. Dollar!" Remember Mrs. Dollar, Chris?

    06:33-06:52

I said, "Mrs. Dollar!" And she goes, "Jeff Miller!" She says, "Why are you dressed like that?" But I said, "Because I didn't think anybody was going to see me!" I wasn't ready to meet people that day.

    06:55-06:56

And here's the point of that story.

    06:56-07:01

When it comes to knowing Jesus, that's part of the problem for us.

    07:03-07:05

It's not that He's not ready to meet us.

    07:06-07:10

Our problem is we're sometimes not ready to meet Him.

    07:13-07:18

We sort of show up to church half-dressed, hoping that we don't meet Him.

    07:20-07:31

Well, God sent someone to not only introduce Jesus, but to tell us - this is it, this is the sermon today, church.

    07:32-07:36

God sent someone to tell us how to prepare to meet Him.

    07:38-07:41

And that man's name, we call him John the Baptist.

    07:43-07:45

He was the last Old Testament prophet.

    07:45-07:47

He was the first New Testament preacher.

    07:48-07:51

He was the most popular preacher of his day until Jesus.

    07:55-07:58

And he received the greatest compliment any person had ever received.

    07:58-07:59

    Matthew 11.11.

    08:00-08:05

Jesus said among men born of women, no one has risen greater than John the Baptist.

    08:07-08:11

And honestly, I think John the Baptist is one of the most interesting men who ever walked the planet.

    08:15-08:24

And you can read all about him in the Gospels, especially Luke 1, Luke 3, and we're not going there today.

    08:25-08:31

Because John the Apostle who wrote this, he's not really interested in John the Baptist's biography.

    08:32-08:33

He's only interested in his message.

    08:33-08:42

So we're just going where the text goes here We're going to see that John the Baptist's message was to announce the coming of the Messiah, and here it is.

    08:43-08:47

He's going to call people to prepare to know Him.

    08:49-08:50

    Don't show up half-dressed.

    08:53-08:55

    Prepare yourself to know Jesus.

    08:55-08:59

So if you're taking notes on your outline, you're going to see this in the text.

    08:59-09:01

Here's how to prepare to know Jesus.

    09:01-09:02

    And number one is this.

    09:02-09:05

    Your heart must be ready.

    09:05-09:07

    Your heart must be ready.

    09:07-09:08

    Look at verse 19.

    09:10-09:26

It says, "And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?'" You're like, "Who are these Jews that sent these priests and Levites?" Well, he tells us - jump down to verse 24.

    09:27-09:38

He says, "Now they had been sent from the Pharisees." You're going to see that throughout the Gospel of John when he references the Jews something like 70 times in the Gospel of John.

    09:39-09:45

It's always referring to these elite religious people who wouldn't believe in Jesus and actually hated Jesus.

    09:46-09:49

And here we get their debut in the Gospel of John.

    09:51-09:51

    Verse 20.

    09:52-09:58

Okay, so they're like, "Who are you?" Verse 20 says, "He confessed." This is John the Baptist.

    09:58-10:02

"He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.

    10:04-10:06

Like what does that mean, confessed and not confessed?

    10:06-10:07

    What does that mean?

    10:07-10:14

Well, this was actually a Jewish figure of speech in the day, and it was used for emphasis.

    10:15-10:21

Giving a positive, and then giving a negative, and then doubling down with the positive again.

    10:23-10:26

And I'm not going to give you a whole grammar lesson, but here's the tail end of this.

    10:26-10:27

    Here's what this means.

    10:28-10:35

The structure, the way this is written, indicates that John the Baptist was repeatedly asked this by so many people.

    10:35-10:37

"Hey, are you the Christ? Are you the Christ?

    10:37-10:40

Are you the Christ?" And he was repeatedly...

    10:40-10:43

So he repeatedly had to keep denying that.

    10:43-10:44

"No, I am not the Christ. I am not the Christ.

    10:45-10:46

I am not the Christ. I am not the Christ.

    10:46-10:51

I am not the Christ." And that's what this is saying.

    10:52-11:02

Repeatedly asked, repeatedly answered, "I am not the Christ." and they asked him, "What then, are you Elijah?" Why did they ask that?

    11:02-11:07

Well, in the Old Testament, in the book of Malachi, Elijah was associated with the coming of the Christ.

    11:08-11:16

The Bible says that John the Baptist came in the power and spirit of Elijah, but John the Baptist was not literally Elijah.

    11:16-11:22

He wasn't like the reincarnation of Elijah or anything like that, just in the power and spirit of Elijah.

    11:23-11:35

So they said, "What then, are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." Then they asked, "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." What do they mean by the prophet?

    11:37-11:45

Well, Deuteronomy 18.15, Moses told Israel, "The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers.

    11:45-11:55

It is to him you shall listen." And Jewish history always associated that prophecy from Moses as being the Christ, The "the" prophet is coming.

    11:56-12:11

And they're like, "Oh, you must be the guy that Moses was talking about right back in Deuteronomy." And John the Baptist is like, "Nope, I'm not him either." Look at v. 22, "So they asked him, 'Who are you?

    12:12-12:14

We need to give an answer to those who sinned us.

    12:14-12:20

What do you say about yourself?'" They're like, look, John the Baptist was so popular.

    12:21-12:23

    He was so popular.

    12:23-12:25

They knew he had to be something.

    12:26-12:37

They're like, you don't have this wild, bug-eating, fur-wearing preacher out in the middle of the wilderness with thousands of people coming to get baptized.

    12:38-12:41

And you don't have a guy like - you've got to be something, man.

    12:41-12:42

    You've got to be something.

    12:43-12:43

    So who are you?

    12:44-12:46

They're going to be asking us, and we've got to tell them, who are you?

    12:48-12:50

John the Baptist gives them the answer.

    12:50-13:02

He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord!'" As the prophet Isaiah said.

    13:04-13:06

So John says, "You know who I am?

    13:06-13:06

I'll tell you who I am.

    13:06-13:11

I'm the voice." And that's a reference to Isaiah 40.

    13:11-13:17

In verse 3, it says, "A voice cries in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord.

    13:17-13:30

Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.' Isaiah tells us before the Messiah comes, He will be preceded by a voice in the wilderness that says, "Hey, hey, hey!

    13:31-13:32

Clear a path for the Lord!

    13:33-13:40

Clear a path for the Messiah!" Now yes, John the Baptist was in a literal wilderness.

    13:41-13:44

But this statement obviously has a spiritual meaning.

    13:46-13:52

He says, "Prepare the way of the Lord." John the Baptist didn't work for Pendot.

    13:53-14:05

He was like, "We're going to make straight the paths, we're going to fill in the potholes, we're going to get the obstacles out." And you're like, "I know, Pastor Jeff, because Pendot doesn't do that." This obviously has a spiritual meaning, right?

    14:06-14:07

Because you need to prepare yourself.

    14:09-14:11

The Lord's coming and you need to get ready for that.

    14:13-14:22

In other words, he's saying, You need to create a highway in your heart for the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

    14:23-14:30

You have to be ready - hear this - you have to be ready to know Christ.

    14:32-14:42

I am not saying that once you get your act together, then you can know Jesus.

    14:43-14:47

Because if that was the case, no one would ever come to Christ.

    14:48-14:48

    Amen?

    14:50-14:52

See, this is about your heart.

    14:54-14:57

Is your heart ready to know Christ?

    14:57-15:04

Or, this is the picture, are there obstacles in your heart?

    15:04-15:05

    That's the picture here.

    15:05-15:18

It's like there's this highway to your heart and Christ wants to come into your heart, but there's boulders and garbage and things that need cleared out of the way that's blocking him from coming.

    15:20-15:22

Are there obstacles in your heart?

    15:25-15:26

What do you mean by that? Let me give you a couple examples.

    15:27-15:38

One, the very first church I pastored, Clear Creek Community Church in Ohio, I was, um, that's a long story, but I didn't apply to be the pastor of that church.

    15:38-15:40

I ended up as the pastor of that church.

    15:40-15:41

    That's a whole other story.

    15:42-15:43

You know, buy me Starbucks sometime and I'll tell you about it.

    15:43-15:51

But I was the pastor of this church somehow while I was going to Bible college and while I was working about five other jobs.

    15:51-15:56

One of my other jobs was I was a magazine vendor for Walmarts and Kmarts and I would just invite people to church as I was at work.

    15:56-15:57

I'm like, "Hey, you wanna come to my church?

    15:57-16:09

"Wanna come to church?" And there were a couple cashiers from the one Kmart that came to church for a couple of weeks and then they stopped coming.

    16:09-16:15

So the next time I was doing the magazines, I saw them and the girl's name was Gina.

    16:17-16:23

I said, "Gina, I haven't seen you in church." And I'll never forget, this was over 20 years ago, I'll never forget what she said to me.

    16:25-16:34

She said, "I can't go to church and still live the way that I want to live." It was sad.

    16:35-16:36

    But what was she saying?

    16:37-16:46

She's saying, "I'm not ready to know Christ." In other words, to use this John the Baptist picture here, she's saying, "The highway's not clear, and I'm not willing to clear it.

    16:48-16:58

There's some obstacles that I'm just not willing to remove." You're like, "Man, you have a biblical example of that." Yeah. How about Matthew 19? Remember the rich young ruler?

    16:58-17:00

That's like his whole story, right?

    17:01-17:09

Or the guy came to Jesus and said, "What do I have to do to follow you?" And Jesus said, "Well, keep the commandments." And the guy was like, "OK, I totally did that." And Jesus said, "There's one thing you lack.

    17:09-17:14

Solid possessions. Give the money to the poor, and then you can come and follow me." And the guy went away sad because he had great wealth.

    17:14-17:15

    Remember that story?

    17:17-17:25

See, Jesus knew that the obstacle on the highway to that man's heart was money.

    17:25-17:27

Jesus said, "You want to know me?

    17:29-17:32

Get the obstacle out of the way." And the man walked away sad.

    17:35-17:38

because his obstacle meant too much to him.

    17:40-17:46

So the question for you and I this morning is this, what's your obstacle for knowing Christ?

    17:49-17:56

What's on the highway to your heart that's a big roadblock to your relationship with Jesus Christ?

    17:58-18:04

In other words, what does your heart want more than it wants Jesus?

    18:07-18:09

That's really the issue here, church.

    18:10-18:11

    That's really the issue.

    18:11-18:17

Your heart wants something more than it wants Jesus, and it's not willing to get that obstacle out of the way.

    18:20-18:22

For some people, like the rich young ruler, it is money.

    18:24-18:30

My work, my job, the money, it's just too important to me to get really serious about coming to know Jesus.

    18:31-18:33

For some people, it's their schedule.

    18:33-18:35

"I'm just too busy. I'm just too busy to know Jesus.

    18:36-18:40

And I can't seem to fit Jesus into my schedule." Wow.

    18:43-18:45

    For some people, it's pornography.

    18:48-18:55

Man, I'm stuck, and I know that it's this roadblock that Christ wants to deal with, but I am not willing to deal with it.

    18:58-19:02

For some it's a relationship that you know you shouldn't be in, but here you are.

    19:03-19:08

You're stuck in this relationship, and you know Christ wants to deal with this, and you're not willing to deal with it.

    19:10-19:11

    Maybe for some it's comfort.

    19:13-19:16

You know, it's just easier for me to live my life on my terms.

    19:19-19:23

Yes, yes, yes. Jesus, He forgives.

    19:25-19:26

    Jesus cleanses.

    19:27-19:30

Jesus transforms when you come to know Him.

    19:31-19:41

But the problem comes when you know that coming to Jesus means that you have to deal with this hard stuff and you'd rather not come to Him.

    19:42-19:44

Because you don't want Him to deal with the hard stuff.

    19:45-19:45

    That's the issue.

    19:48-19:53

It's not the lack of wanting on His end, or the lack of power to deal with it on His end.

    19:53-19:58

It's your lack of willingness to let Jesus do what only Jesus can do.

    20:01-20:03

And see, that's why John the Baptist showed up.

    20:03-20:10

He's like, "Hey, the Messiah's here! Clear the path!" Because He's going to change everything.

    20:12-20:14

    But don't show up half-dressed.

    20:15-20:16

    You've got to be ready.

    20:19-20:26

What needs cleared from your heart to prepare the way of the Lord into your heart?

    20:27-20:29

In other words, finish this sentence.

    20:31-20:37

If I'm going to follow Jesus, I know that I am going to need to get rid of blank.

    20:39-20:40

    What goes into blank?

    20:44-20:45

And that's what you need to do, right?

    20:46-20:47

That's what the Bible calls repentance.

    20:50-20:52

And you're like, "You know what, Jeff?

    20:52-20:54

I know I need to do that. I know.

    20:56-20:58

But how am I going to be motivated to do that?

    20:59-21:01

It's here, it's just not here.

    21:01-21:04

How am I going to be motivated to do that?" I'm so glad you asked. Look at number 2.

    21:05-21:13

"Not only your heart must be ready," number 2, "your heart must exalt Him." "Your heart must exalt Him." Look at verses 25-28.

    21:14-21:25

Because they asked him, "Why are you baptizing if you are neither the Christ nor Elijah nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize you with water.

    21:26-21:43

But among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." These things took place in Bethany in Jordan where John was baptizing.

    21:45-21:46

    Your heart must exalt Him.

    21:48-21:49

That has to be your motivation.

    21:51-21:56

Looking at the text here, obviously these people that came to John had a big authority issue.

    21:57-22:07

They're like, alright, so if you're not the Christ, and you're not Elijah, and you're not the prophet, then where do you get off doing this baptism thing that you're doing?

    22:10-22:10

    You see John's answer?

    22:11-22:16

His answer was basically, "Look, what I'm doing is just the symbol.

    22:18-22:20

I'm not the main event here.

    22:21-22:26

You guys are putting the spotlight on me, but the spotlight doesn't go on me.

    22:26-22:32

The spotlight goes on Jesus Christ." John's like, "Your problem is you don't know Him.

    22:33-22:37

That's why you're focused too much on what I'm doing instead of what he's doing.

    22:40-22:41

    You can't miss this.

    22:41-22:43

Oh gosh, this is a whole other sermon.

    22:44-22:46

And I know we've already had - this is like the second sermon of the day.

    22:46-22:47

    I get that.

    22:49-22:51

Man, I wish I had the time.

    22:52-22:53

    Let me say this.

    22:53-22:58

Despite John the Baptist's popularity, John the Baptist knew his own identity.

    23:00-23:04

And that is a much bigger achievement you might think it is.

    23:06-23:06

    Why?

    23:09-23:10

    Think of this man.

    23:12-23:14

Thousands and thousands of people were coming to him.

    23:14-23:16

How many times do you think he was asked if he was the Christ?

    23:19-23:20

I'm going to be honest with you.

    23:21-23:27

It's hard for me to wrap my brain around how did that not go to his head?

    23:27-23:28

    Right?

    23:28-23:29

    Could you imagine?

    23:30-23:35

Thousands, "Are you the Christ?" They thought this guy was so awesome, they're like, "You have to be the Christ.

    23:35-23:37

You have to be the anointed One of God.

    23:37-23:40

You have to be the One promised in the Scriptures.

    23:40-23:53

That has to be you." And you know, after you have people applauding you for so long, it's real easy to start to think that you must be pretty special.

    23:55-23:58

But John the Baptist knew his messages did not make him great.

    24:00-24:02

was the subject of His messages.

    24:03-24:04

    That was great.

    24:07-24:10

In the same way, you have to see Jesus Christ for who He is.

    24:11-24:12

We covered that last week, right?

    24:12-24:15

We saw in the prologue, He is God.

    24:15-24:16

    He is the Creator.

    24:17-24:18

    He is life.

    24:18-24:20

He is the light that leads to the life.

    24:20-24:22

He alone makes people children of God.

    24:23-24:24

He's full of grace and truth.

    24:24-24:27

He alone is the revealer of God.

    24:27-24:43

And when you get that, like John, when you really get who Jesus Christ is, you realize, again like John, I'm not even worthy to untie his shoes.

    24:46-25:00

But at the same time, this God, this awesome, holy, sovereign, transcendent God, This God wants to know me and wants me to know Him?

    25:03-25:16

This God wants a relationship with me and He's just saying, "Hey, I want to live in your heart so can you clear a path?" There's your motivation.

    25:18-25:19

When you see how awesome He is.

    25:20-25:27

You're like, "Yeah, I'll get rid of anything You've got to stop me from knowing this God.

    25:29-25:31

You've got to see Jesus for who He is.

    25:31-25:32

    You've got to exalt Him.

    25:32-25:37

And that humbly motivates you to do whatever it takes to know Him.

    25:38-25:40

    Your heart must exalt Him.

    25:40-25:45

And then finally for today, jot this down, your heart must receive what He gives.

    25:46-25:53

Your heart must receive what He actually gives.

    25:55-25:56

    Look at v. 29.

    25:59-26:24

It says, "The next day, he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!' This is He of whom I said, 'After Me comes a man who ranks before Me because he was before Me.'" Speaking of the deity of Christ there.

    26:25-26:28

Verse 31, John says, "I myself did not know Him.

    26:29-26:35

For this purpose, I came baptizing with water, that He might be revealed to Israel.

    26:37-26:50

And John bore witness, I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him." I myself did not know Him.

    26:50-27:11

But He who sent me to baptize with water - that's God - said to me, "He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." And I have seen and I have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

    27:12-27:14

Your heart must receive what He gives.

    27:17-27:21

Jesus Christ's baptism is what officially kicked off His ministry.

    27:22-27:30

And here, we don't really have the account of the baptism, but sort of John giving us a flashback, a recalling.

    27:30-27:34

Here's what happened when Jesus came to me to be baptized.

    27:35-27:39

Did you notice, even John the Baptist said he didn't know Jesus at first.

    27:39-27:41

Did you notice that he said that twice?

    27:41-27:42

    Like verse 31, verse 33?

    27:44-27:45

    I didn't know Him.

    27:48-27:48

    Why?

    27:50-27:52

Because Jesus looked like every other Jewish man in the area.

    27:53-27:54

    Right?

    27:55-28:04

You had thousands of people coming to John the Baptist, and it wasn't like Jesus was eight feet tall and glowing with the blonde hair like you see the American portraits of Him.

    28:05-28:06

He didn't look like that at all.

    28:07-28:13

So all these Jewish men coming to John the Baptist, he's like, "I didn't know who the Christ was.

    28:14-28:17

There wasn't anything except this one sign.

    28:19-28:22

And yes, they were related by blood and all that.

    28:22-28:23

    That's another story.

    28:23-28:25

But John said, "I didn't know.

    28:26-28:31

I didn't know." But when Jesus was baptized, it was confirmed.

    28:33-28:34

And John saw it and he bears witness.

    28:37-28:44

He says, "This is the Son of God." on board witness to two things in this passage.

    28:44-28:45

Two things that the Son of God offers.

    28:48-28:49

    Look at verse 29.

    28:49-28:51

This is one of the best verses in the whole New Testament.

    28:53-29:13

When John says concerning Jesus, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." We might be familiar enough with the message that we lose the impact, I have to try to imagine this statement as a first century Jew.

    29:14-29:15

    They're waiting for the Messiah.

    29:15-29:23

And in their mind, it's going to be this awesome warrior king that's going to come through with his sword and just mow down the Romans.

    29:23-29:24

    That's what they're looking for.

    29:24-29:29

They're looking for Samson on steroids kind of thing, right?

    29:30-29:33

And the Messiah's here, and what does John the Baptist call Him?

    29:34-29:35

    He calls Him a lamb.

    29:37-29:40

And again, I think the impact is lost on us, Imagine a first century Jew.

    29:40-29:43

What's the first thing they think of when they hear "lamb"?

    29:44-29:45

    Like, oh, a sacrifice.

    29:46-29:53

Lambs are these weak, helpless, defenseless, heading for death creatures.

    29:56-29:57

    This is the Messiah.

    29:59-30:01

John's like, yeah, this is the Messiah.

    30:01-30:07

He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

    30:07-30:12

Now that obviously doesn't mean Just because Jesus came, all sin is gone.

    30:12-30:14

    What this means is this.

    30:15-30:21

For the whole world, there is One Who can take away sin.

    30:23-30:28

Remember, v. 12 says that we have to receive and we have to believe in His name.

    30:28-30:39

And when you do, when you receive Christ, The Bible says He takes away your sin.

    30:41-30:42

    Takes away.

    30:44-30:44

    See, that's huge.

    30:45-30:49

That's huge because in the Old Testament, countless sacrifices were made.

    30:49-30:53

Countless rams and lambs and birds and goats.

    30:53-31:02

There are just constantly sacrifices being made, but none of those Old Testament sacrifices could take away sin.

    31:04-31:08

they could do was atone sin or cover sin.

    31:09-31:16

And there is a big difference between covering sin and taking away sin.

    31:18-31:25

There's a big difference between covering something and taking away something.

    31:26-31:27

    You understand the difference?

    31:28-31:29

Let me illustrate that for you.

    31:29-31:41

A few months ago, Cade was-- we have this little storage space in our house, under our house, a little crawl space where we store decorations and toys and whatever.

    31:41-31:44

And Cade was under there looking for something.

    31:44-31:57

And he came up and he said to Aaron, he goes, Mom, do we have any toy rubber snakes stored under there?

    31:59-32:23

And Aaron's like, "Jeff!" So I'm like, "What do you see, Kade?" Kade's like, "I saw a snake. Do we have any toy snakes down there?" And I'm like, "I don't. Do you?" And Aaron's like, "Jeff, you're going to have to deal with this." So do you know what I did?

    32:24-32:30

As I went into the kitchen, I got one of her tea towels, and I crawled under that crawl space.

    32:30-32:33

And I found the snake, and I put the tea towel over the snake.

    32:34-32:35

    And I'm like, done.

    32:38-32:39

    [LAUGHTER]

    32:40-32:41

    Snake is covered.

    32:44-32:45

    Is that what Aaron wanted?

    32:47-32:50

Do you see now the difference between covering and taking away?

    32:51-32:52

You know what I actually did with the snake?

    32:52-32:56

Was I put him in a little bin and it was a little guard of snakes.

    32:56-33:03

I played with him for a little bit, but I took him away someplace else.

    33:03-33:05

Didn't have the heart, I didn't have the heart to kill him.

    33:05-33:11

I mean, but do you see the difference between covering and taking away?

    33:14-33:20

That's the difference between what happened in the Old Testament to sin and what Jesus Christ does to sin.

    33:20-33:22

And he doesn't just throw the tea towel over it.

    33:23-33:24

    He takes it away.

    33:26-33:31

Or to put it another way, sin is a debt against God.

    33:31-33:35

And the Old Testament sacrifices, well, they were like a credit card.

    33:37-33:41

You know, a credit card doesn't actually pay for something.

    33:41-33:42

    You know that, right?

    33:43-33:48

A credit card covers the amount that's owed.

    33:50-33:51

    But that bill still comes.

    33:53-33:56

Payment still needs to be made.

    33:56-34:00

And you see, the Old Testament sacrifices were sort of like that.

    34:00-34:04

Every time a sacrifice was made, it was just swiping the credit card, swiping the credit card.

    34:04-34:05

    Okay, you're covered.

    34:05-34:07

    But sin is still there.

    34:07-34:08

    You're covered.

    34:11-34:14

Then Jesus comes along and He's cash.

    34:14-34:15

    Jesus is cash.

    34:16-34:17

    He makes full payment.

    34:18-34:20

    Not just covering the debt.

    34:21-34:23

    Jesus takes away the debt.

    34:24-34:26

That's the first thing Jesus offers.

    34:27-34:28

    That's taking away your sin.

    34:28-34:45

The second thing Jesus offers, verse 33, when John says, "This is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." John's baptism with water in those days was a symbol of readiness.

    34:46-34:47

    Jesus offers the real baptism.

    34:49-34:53

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is when you receive Jesus Christ.

    34:54-34:57

His Spirit comes and lives inside you.

    34:57-35:00

God's Holy Spirit comes and indwells your heart.

    35:02-35:08

And that leads, 100% of the time, to transformation.

    35:10-35:13

If you haven't changed, then you don't really know Christ.

    35:15-35:21

Because when the God of the universe lives in your heart, you will change.

    35:21-35:26

Jesus Christ changes your desires, your purpose in life, your attitudes.

    35:27-35:31

Everything changes when you come to know Jesus Christ.

    35:33-35:36

So your heart has to be ready to receive what He gives.

    35:37-35:46

What He wants to give is taking away your sin and baptizing you in the Holy Spirit.

    35:46-35:47

    That's what He's offering.

    35:49-35:50

But what are you looking for from Jesus?

    35:52-36:03

"Jesus, get me out of this trouble that I'm in." Or, "Jesus, get me a husband." Or sometimes that one comes before the first one.

    36:05-36:14

Or, "Jesus, please make me wealthy." Or, "Jesus, at the very least, will you please pay my bills?" I'll let my business take off.

    36:14-36:16

    Jesus, bring me more customers.

    36:16-36:23

Jesus, will you please make my life easier?" But you know, Jesus didn't promise any of that.

    36:26-36:31

And there are so many people who end up disappointed in Jesus because they're trying to cash checks that He didn't write.

    36:33-36:44

Now, sure, 100%, Sometimes, Jesus provides these things to His children.

    36:44-36:54

But, what we see in this passage is what Jesus Christ always offers everyone.

    36:57-37:01

That's to take away your sin and to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.

    37:01-37:09

In other words, the thing that Jesus Christ offers everyone that you can take to the bank is forgiveness and transformation.

    37:10-37:11

    That's what he's after.

    37:11-37:13

The external stuff, yeah, maybe, possibly.

    37:14-37:16

    He's a father. He'll make those decisions.

    37:16-37:18

    Trust him with that. Great.

    37:18-37:23

But these are the two things that he will give the person that turns to him.

    37:23-37:25

    Forgiveness and transformation.

    37:26-37:31

And some people don't receive Christ because they're looking for things from Christ that Christ didn't offer.

    37:33-37:34

Are you ready to receive that?

    37:37-37:40

Are you ready to know Jesus?

    37:43-37:44

Then I would say exalt Him.

    37:45-37:50

Clear the path in your heart to know Him.

    37:52-37:55

Somebody today might be ready to do that right now.

    37:55-37:56

And I'd like you to bow your heads.

    37:57-38:00

As the worship team comes forward, we're going to pray.

    38:03-38:03

    Bow your heads.

    38:06-38:09

Let me ask you, have you cleared any obstacle in your heart?

    38:11-38:13

Did you prepare the way for the Lord?

    38:15-38:25

Listen, whatever that obstacle is, Jesus knows what it is, and He will forgive you for whatever that is, and He will transform you.

    38:27-38:29

But you have to be willing to allow Him to do that.

    38:32-38:34

Have you exalted Christ in your heart?

    38:37-38:50

To say, "This God is worth knowing, a God that would adopt me as His child, a God who would love me and give me everything in Christ, every spiritual blessing is mine in Christ.

    38:53-39:00

This is a God who wants to forgive me and transform me." Father, we bow ourselves before You today.

    39:02-39:03

There are people here that know You.

    39:06-39:17

That while they are saved, while they do have Your Holy Spirit, they just haven't been walking with You.

    39:19-39:30

They've allowed obstacles to get back in the road that yes, Father, from Your perspective, we have fellowship in Christ, but Your Word is very clear that we can hinder our own walks with Christ.

    39:32-39:36

We can feel distant, not from Christ's doing, but from our own doing.

    39:38-39:40

I pray, Father, that today is the day of repentance.

    39:42-39:48

And Father, for the person here who doesn't know You, maybe for the first time, the lights are coming on.

    39:51-39:55

I pray, first of all, Father, that You would be greatly magnified in their heart.

    39:56-39:58

That they would see Christ for who He is.

    40:01-40:12

This glorious and gracious God, full of grace and truth, who loves us and wants better for us, wants to forgive us, wants to transform us.

    40:12-40:16

Father, I pray that Your Holy Spirit would grab that heart right now.

    40:18-40:20

That they would see the beauty of the Lord.

    40:22-40:24

Clear whatever obstacle is in the way.

    40:26-40:32

Father, we don't want to be a people who only get half-dressed and hope we don't run into You.

    40:34-40:35

    Father, prepare us.

    40:37-40:50

By the power of Your Spirit, Father, by Your grace, grant us repentance and prepare us to truly come to know Jesus Christ.

    40:51-40:52

It's in His name that we pray.

    40:53-40:53

    Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 1:19-34

  1. What was your biggest “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Explain John the Baptist’s mission. What was He telling to do concerning the coming Christ (John 1:23, see Isaiah 40:3)? How was baptism a way people were preparing themselves?

  3. How is “exalting Christ” a motivator to “knowing Christ”?

  4. How would you reply if someone asked you, “How can I grow in exalting Christ in my own life?”

  5. Read John 1:29. What is the significance of “taking away” sin?

  6. *Bonus: John the Baptist got the greatest compliment in the history of everything - Matthew 11:11. What do you think it was about John that made Jesus say this?

BREAKOUT
Pray for one another. Each of you list an “obstacle” that needs cleared from your heart to “make straight the way of the Lord”.

  • 01:10-01:14

Grab your Bibles, please, and open up to John 1.

    01:15-01:20

We are kicking off a new ministry year, as we do the first Sunday of October.

    01:21-01:26

And our theme this year is "Knowing Jesus." John 1.

    01:27-01:33

Our theme this year is "Knowing Jesus." And I can't think of a better theme for our church.

    01:33-01:36

    Not just knowing about Jesus.

    01:36-01:39

That's why the word "about" is slashed through.

    01:40-01:45

I mean, sure, there's benefit in knowing about Jesus, but that's not the endgame.

    01:46-01:51

Knowing about Jesus is a step to the endgame, which is knowing Jesus.

    01:52-01:56

Like, well, is this semantics, Jeff? What are we doing here?

    01:56-02:02

What's the difference between knowing about Jesus and knowing Jesus?

    02:02-02:05

What's the difference?" And the answer answers everything.

    02:06-02:08

I want you to just imagine this scenario with me.

    02:08-02:17

Imagine there's this young single guy that's attending this large church, and he sees a beautiful single girl.

    02:18-02:24

And he's like, "Hold the phone. Who is that?" Never seen her before, but one of his friends knows who she is.

    02:25-02:30

And he says, "Hey, can you tell me about her?" And his friend says, "Oh yeah, I can tell you about her.

    02:30-02:35

She loves the Lord. She loves missions. She loves working with children.

    02:36-02:38

She loves traveling. She loves Steelers football.

    02:39-02:42

She loves to watch cheesy comedy movies.

    02:42-02:47

Now this young single guy, in hearing this, let me ask you, is that enough for him?

    02:47-02:54

Is he going to walk away from that going, "Well, okay, that's all I need to know. Thank you very much." And he's done. Is that it? Is that enough? Obviously not.

    02:55-02:57

Because now he knows about her.

    02:58-03:04

And now that he knows about her, that makes him want to know her, right?

    03:05-03:08

"I want to meet her!" Do you see the difference?

    03:09-03:15

The Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    03:16-03:19

Like the illustration with this young single guy.

    03:20-03:30

Knowing about Jesus or the facts, that's going to lead you to wanting to know Jesus personally even more.

    03:30-03:32

And that's the whole theme of John, you know.

    03:33-03:44

The God of the universe has revealed Himself by coming into this world as a man, Jesus Christ, to save you and to have a personal relationship with you.

    03:44-03:50

In fact, Jesus said it this way in John 17, verse 3, Jesus was in the garden and He was praying.

    03:50-03:53

But I want you to see one of the things that Jesus said while He was praying.

    03:54-04:01

He said, "And this is eternal life." Like, whoa, whoa, your ears better perk up here.

    04:01-04:02

    What is eternal life?

    04:03-04:04

Look at what Jesus says eternal life is.

    04:05-04:08

"This is eternal life, that they may..." What's it say?

    04:09-04:20

"Know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." You know, when you think about it, that's about the boldest statement a human being can make.

    04:20-04:28

To say, "You can personally know the Almighty." Like, well, how in the world is that possible?

    04:29-04:39

Well, John 1:18 says, "No one has ever seen God." The only God who is at the Father's side, He has made Him known.

    04:40-04:44

And that's a fundamental truth that's going to drive this whole series in John.

    04:45-04:47

There's only one way that we can know God.

    04:48-04:49

He has to make Himself known.

    04:50-04:54

And the great news, according to this verse, is that He has.

    04:55-04:58

And He's done it in the most personal way possible.

    04:59-05:01

He showed up, and He introduced Himself.

    05:02-05:05

So John 1, we're going to be looking at the first 18 verses today.

    05:05-05:09

The title of the message, if you're taking notes, I want you to jot some things down.

    05:10-05:16

"He has made Himself known." We're just going to look at three things Jesus Christ has revealed about Himself.

    05:16-05:19

Therefore, three things that Jesus Christ has revealed about God.

    05:19-05:30

Alright? We're going to be answering three questions, and the first question is this, "Who is Jesus?" And the answer you're going to see very clearly in the text, "He is God." He is God.

    05:30-05:40

Luke 1-3 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." He was in the beginning with God.

    05:41-05:47

All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

    05:47-05:49

Who is Jesus? He is God.

    05:49-05:56

Notice how John starts out under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "in the beginning." Does that sound familiar? Where have you heard that phrase before?

    05:56-05:58

"In the beginning." Where have you heard that before?

    05:59-06:00

    Genesis 1, right?

    06:00-06:05

He says, "In the beginning was the Word." The Word was with God and the Word was God.

    06:05-06:08

Why did he choose the word "Word"?

    06:08-06:15

Well, there are a lot of reasons, but specifically to the Jews, the word "word" has major significance.

    06:15-06:30

Because when you read the Old Testament, you see, "The word of the Lord came to this prophet," or, "The word of the Lord came to that prophet." And you know when you read the Old Testament that God is very serious about His word.

    06:30-06:35

That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel, we are very serious about God's word.

    06:36-06:37

    Because He is.

    06:37-06:39

Why is God so serious about the Word?

    06:39-06:42

Why are we so serious about the Word of God?

    06:42-06:44

Well, let me ask you, what is the purpose of words?

    06:45-06:46

    What's the purpose of words?

    06:46-06:49

Words are to communicate something, right?

    06:50-06:59

That's why John uses the word "Word." He doesn't say, "In the beginning was the thought, and the thought was with God, and the thought was God." He doesn't say that.

    07:00-07:14

He doesn't say "deed." "In the beginning was the deed, and the deed was with God, and the deed was God." Very specifically, He uses the word "Word." Because "Word" is something that's deliberately used to convey information to another person.

    07:15-07:19

We're going to see in a couple moments in verse 17 that this Word has a name.

    07:20-07:21

    The name is Jesus Christ.

    07:22-07:25

Jesus is His name. Christ isn't His last name, by the way.

    07:25-07:30

It's a title. It means Messiah, the Anointed One, the One Promised.

    07:31-07:37

But Jesus is God's communication to man. He's a living, breathing Word.

    07:37-08:02

You see, this is where cults get all messed up, and how they evaluate this question, "Who is Jesus Christ?" Depending on which cult you ask, some people say, "Well, Jesus was just a prophet." Some cults say, "Jesus was Satan's brother." Or, "He was an angel." Or, "He was this advanced human." And they all deny what Jesus has very clearly revealed about Himself.

    08:02-08:07

Do you see that? He was with God and was God.

    08:07-08:11

He is God and is with God at the same time.

    08:12-08:18

You're like, "All right, Pastor Jeff, we'll explain that one." Are you ready? I can't. I cannot explain that.

    08:18-08:20

    That statement cannot be explained.

    08:21-08:28

If I said to you, "Yesterday, I was with my friend Nathaniel, And I was my friend Nathaniel.

    08:28-08:32

You'd be like, "Were you drinking with Nathaniel?" That statement doesn't make any sense.

    08:33-08:36

How can you be with somebody and be somebody at the same time?

    08:37-08:38

    It makes no human sense.

    08:38-08:42

And the truth is, it can't make sense to us. Why?

    08:43-08:44

    Because here's the thing, church.

    08:44-08:49

From the minute you were born, you've only ever known two things in your life.

    08:50-08:52

    That's time and space. Right?

    08:52-08:57

We can't fathom an existence outside of time and space.

    08:58-09:02

What would it be like to live in existence where space isn't a thing?

    09:02-09:04

We have no idea because that's all we've ever known.

    09:05-09:09

What about time? What would it be like to live in existence outside of time?

    09:09-09:14

I have no idea because the only thing I've ever known is time and space.

    09:15-09:18

Well, you see, God lives outside of time and space.

    09:18-09:25

He lives a level of existence that doesn't make sense to a finite mind bound in time and space.

    09:26-09:33

So, can I logically explain how Jesus is with God and He is God at the same time? I can't.

    09:33-09:40

The only thing that's logical is that we should have an inability to explain a God who lives outside of time and space.

    09:41-09:43

This is just what the Bible says.

    09:43-09:49

I guess it's kind of ironic that the only thing that makes sense is that a God like that can't make sense to us.

    09:50-09:52

But this is how He's revealed Himself.

    09:52-09:58

Someone once said that God created man in His own image, and then man returned the favor.

    09:58-10:01

And that's why the Word is so important.

    10:01-10:12

That's why when you come to Harvest Bible Chapel, we're like, "What does the Word say?" And the messages come from the Word, because it's not up to us to define God, because He's revealed Himself.

    10:13-10:15

But that sure doesn't stop us from trying, does it?

    10:15-10:16

    People want to redefine God.

    10:16-10:19

People want to make God in their own image.

    10:19-10:22

People say things like, "Well, God just forgives everyone.

    10:22-10:24

    It doesn't matter about Jesus.

    10:25-10:26

None of that stuff really matters.

    10:26-10:32

God just forgives everyone." Or people say, "You know, God would never allow anyone to go to hell.

    10:32-10:36

That's not God." Or, "God wants to make me wealthy.

    10:37-10:38

    That's God.

    10:38-10:44

That's God's mission is to make me wealthy." And none of those things have been revealed to us in His Word.

    10:44-10:54

You see, in the Word, the written Word, which talks about the living Word, Jesus Christ, when Jesus came into the earth, God was saying, "This is who I am.

    10:54-11:07

I'm not like this, and I'm not like that. I am this." And the clear teaching of the Bible in the Old Testament, throughout John, as we will see, and throughout the New Testament, is Jesus is God.

    11:07-11:14

And we preach Him, and we worship Him, and we celebrate Him as nothing lesser than that.

    11:15-11:16

    He is God.

    11:16-11:17

Who is Jesus? He is God.

    11:17-11:20

The second question, why did Jesus come to earth?

    11:20-11:23

The answer is, to give life.

    11:23-11:24

    Look at verse 4.

    11:24-11:36

It says, "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." First of all, "In Him was life," meaning Jesus didn't get life from someone else.

    11:36-11:38

He's actually the source of life.

    11:38-11:44

But then he says, this is an interesting statement, he says, "The life was the light of men." What's he talking about here?

    11:45-11:46

    Listen very closely.

    11:47-11:53

What he's saying is, Jesus is not only the end, He's the means to the end.

    11:53-11:54

What do you mean by that?

    11:55-11:55

    Here's what I mean.

    11:56-11:58

The Bible says that Jesus is the good shepherd, right?

    11:59-11:59

    He's the good shepherd.

    12:00-12:04

At the same time, Jesus is also the door to the sheepfold.

    12:05-12:07

He's the shepherd and the door at the same time.

    12:07-12:11

Jesus, the Bible says, is the Lamb of God.

    12:11-12:15

He sacrificed Himself to take away our sin.

    12:16-12:23

You know, the Bible says that Jesus Christ is also, at the same time, the High Priest who offers the sacrifice on the cross.

    12:24-12:27

He's the Lamb and the Priest at the same time.

    12:27-12:36

And in the same way, here, Jesus Christ not only is the life, but He is the light that leads us to the life.

    12:36-12:39

Because the world is full of darkness and death.

    12:39-12:40

    Have you noticed?

    12:41-12:45

The world is a dark and dying and dead place.

    12:46-12:53

And Jesus came to give life, but at the same time He's the light that leads to the life.

    12:53-12:54

Further explanation, look at verse 5.

    12:55-13:02

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." When Jesus arrived on the earth, it was like God turned the lights on.

    13:02-13:08

shedding light on truths about who is God, who is man, what is sin.

    13:08-13:13

And this light forced the darkness of sin and ignorance away.

    13:13-13:16

He says the light cannot be overcome by the darkness.

    13:16-13:21

It never gets so dark that the darkness smothers light, right?

    13:22-13:30

You've never been to a cavern or a cave so dark that you strike a match and the darkness just sucks up the light because it's so dark.

    13:30-13:32

My little match can't overpower it.

    13:33-13:34

    That's a scientific impossibility.

    13:35-13:37

That's also true about Jesus Christ.

    13:37-13:43

This world is a dark place, but I'm telling you, the darkness can't overcome the light of Jesus Christ.

    13:44-13:52

And if you want a preview for what that looks like, we spent the entire last year in the book of Revelation, all the sermons are online, go listen this afternoon.

    13:52-13:54

But the darkness will not overcome.

    13:55-13:56

    Light always wins.

    13:57-14:04

He says, "There was a man sent from God whose name was John." This is talking about John the Baptist, not the John who wrote this Gospel.

    14:05-14:10

He says, "He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him.

    14:11-14:15

He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

    14:15-14:30

The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world." So he mentions John the Baptist, A key figure prophesied in the Old Testament, in the book of Isaiah, in the book of Malachi, and we're going to talk about him more in a minute.

    14:30-14:33

But verse 9 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the only light.

    14:34-14:37

Only Jesus Christ can truly enlighten someone.

    14:37-14:43

So the only way, the only way that you can truly help someone is by pointing them to Jesus Christ.

    14:43-14:49

The only way you are able to truly help someone is to point them to Jesus Christ.

    14:49-14:51

As a pastor, I do counseling.

    14:51-14:57

And I tell people straight up front, there's only one type of counseling that I do, and it's biblical counseling.

    14:57-14:58

    Like, what's biblical counseling?

    14:58-15:00

Well, biblical counseling is only for believers.

    15:02-15:04

    I don't do secular counseling.

    15:05-15:07

And I thought about that some more, and I really, I can't.

    15:07-15:08

    I can't do secular counseling.

    15:09-15:10

And then I thought about it more.

    15:10-15:11

Now, you know what? I won't.

    15:12-15:13

I won't do secular counseling. Why?

    15:14-15:15

    Because it doesn't help.

    15:16-15:20

Oh, sure, it might be the pain pill that makes you feel better for a couple hours.

    15:21-15:24

It might be the Band-Aid that you put on cancer.

    15:25-15:28

But secular counseling doesn't really help.

    15:28-15:30

The only type of counseling I do is biblical counseling.

    15:31-15:39

So the only people that I am really able to counsel are Christians, people who are born again, who have the Word of God as their authority.

    15:40-15:45

Because the only way I can truly help someone is by pointing to the light that is Jesus Christ.

    15:45-15:48

You're like, "Wait a second, Pastor Jeff, that sounds awfully narrow-minded.

    15:48-15:53

I mean, what if somebody comes to you for counseling, and they're not a believer in Jesus Christ, what do you tell them?

    15:53-15:54

What do you think I tell them?

    15:54-15:58

"Yeah, I tell them about Jesus, and I tell them up front, 'Look, I can't help you.

    15:59-16:10

I can't help you, but I know somebody that can, and his name is Jesus Christ, and he's been helping people for like 2,000 years now, and he can transform you, and he can change you.

    16:10-16:23

Go to Jesus Christ. I can't help you, but I can point you to somebody who can, because he's the one that can enlighten." Look at verse 10. It says, "He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

    16:23-16:29

He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him." These are some of the saddest verses in the Bible when you think about it.

    16:30-16:35

Here, God Almighty, the Creator of everything, showed up to His creation.

    16:36-16:38

He shows up, and they didn't recognize Him.

    16:39-16:44

That's not sad enough. It says, "He came to His own." Who were His own? It's Israel, right?

    16:44-16:48

Ever since creation, God promised Israel that the Messiah was coming.

    16:48-16:49

    The Messiah is coming.

    16:49-16:54

And there's all these writings in the Old Testament describing Him, and what He's going to be like, and what He's going to do.

    16:55-17:02

And Israel had centuries and centuries and centuries of prophecies and promises of the coming Messiah, and He's here!

    17:02-17:05

And Israel didn't recognize Him. It's sad.

    17:06-17:21

And you're like, "Well, mission failure then, right?" No. Look at verse 12. It says, "But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God." This is how the light leads to life.

    17:21-17:26

To those who received Him, those who believed in His name, those are synonyms, really.

    17:26-17:29

To receive Jesus Christ is to believe in His name.

    17:29-17:33

And when you believe in His name, that is receiving Jesus Christ.

    17:33-17:38

And when you truly receive Christ, He gives you the right to become what?

    17:39-17:41

What does your Bible say? He gives you the right to become what?

    17:42-17:43

He gives you the right to become religious.

    17:44-17:47

Is that what your Bible says? That's what some people think it says.

    17:47-17:51

For those who received Him, He gives you the right to become a church member.

    17:51-17:52

That's not what it says either.

    17:53-17:55

It says He gives you the right to become a child of God.

    17:56-17:59

See, this is about a personal relationship, not about religion.

    17:59-18:01

    It's about a personal relationship.

    18:01-18:03

A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from somebody.

    18:03-18:05

I don't know how they found me online or whatever.

    18:05-18:08

They're like, "Hey, I want to have a wedding.

    18:08-18:28

"Me and my fiance wanna have a wedding." And Justin smiling, "You were part of this, right?" And they're like, "I wanna have a wedding, "but I don't want it to be religious." I'm like, "Awesome, "because I don't want it to be religious either." And I replied like, "Look, we're not about religion "at our church, we're about a transforming relationship "with Jesus Christ, and I would love to tell you about that." There's a huge difference.

    18:29-18:31

She didn't email me back after I said that.

    18:31-18:34

And sometimes it's hard to not take things personally, but I didn't.

    18:35-18:37

But here's the point, do you see it in the text?

    18:37-18:40

What God wants for you is not religion.

    18:40-18:42

What God wants for you is a relationship.

    18:43-18:44

Like, well, what kind of relationship does he want?

    18:44-18:45

    Did you see that?

    18:45-18:46

    A child of God.

    18:47-18:52

And if you have a child, you know how deep that relationship is between parent and child, right?

    18:53-18:55

And you're like, I don't have any children, Pastor Jeff.

    18:55-18:56

    Do you have a parent?

    18:56-18:58

How many people in here had parents at one point?

    18:59-19:00

How many of us have parents?

    19:00-19:01

    Okay, we established that.

    19:02-19:06

You get the closeness of the relationship.

    19:06-19:14

And isn't it awesome that God Almighty says, "I want to be your Father." That's the kind of relationship I want with you.

    19:15-19:27

Look at verse 13, it says, "Who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." In other words, you become a child of God, not in the usual ways that someone becomes a child.

    19:28-19:28

    It's a work of God.

    19:29-19:37

He says, "You don't become a child of God from blood." Meaning, no offense, It doesn't matter how great of a Christian your grandmama was.

    19:37-19:43

Your grandmama might have been the greatest saint walking the earth in her day, but that does nothing for your walk.

    19:43-19:46

That does nothing for your salvation. Nothing!

    19:47-19:51

You're not going to stand before the Lord someday, and the Lord's like, "Oh, your grandma was who?

    19:52-19:56

Well, let's fetch her up here!" It's not about that. It's not blood.

    19:56-19:59

You don't become a child of God by a will of the flesh.

    20:00-20:06

Meaning, hear this, It's not even a personal act on your part that makes you a child of God.

    20:07-20:10

You don't walk in and say, "Huh, those baptisms were interesting.

    20:10-20:13

Well, you know what? Today I'm making myself a child of God.

    20:14-20:20

Today I am born againing myself." He says it's not the will of man, meaning it's not the act of another person.

    20:20-20:32

Like me and the elders get together and we just get in your face and like, "Guess what? Today you are a child of God!" They're like, "Well, the elder said it, so I guess I'm a child of God." No, no, no, it's not the will of man.

    20:33-20:34

How do you become a child of God?

    20:34-20:42

He says, look again, verse 13, "Born not of blood, nor the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God." This is a work of God.

    20:43-20:56

Hear this, as much as you may want to, you cannot, you cannot, you cannot make someone receive eternal life in Jesus Christ.

    20:56-20:57

    You can't do it.

    20:58-21:04

Believe me, there are times I wish that I could put somebody in a headlock and drag them to the baptistry.

    21:05-21:07

And you are giving your life to Christ today, man!

    21:08-21:10

You can't do it. You can't do it by your will.

    21:11-21:14

I can't do it by my will. This is a work of God.

    21:14-21:18

Parents, you can't force your children to love Jesus Christ.

    21:19-21:26

In our last Next Generation Prayer Meeting, we were praying for the salvation of our children and the children in this church.

    21:26-21:27

    We can't do it.

    21:28-21:35

No matter how many times they go to harvest kids, no matter how many times they sit in youth group, we can't make someone become a child of God.

    21:35-21:40

Like, "Well, if I can't do it, what is my part?" Well, prayer, obviously. This is a spiritual thing.

    21:40-21:44

Prayer. And remember I said we were going to talk about John the Baptist again?

    21:45-21:47

Our job is just like John the Baptist's job.

    21:47-21:48

    We saw in verse 7.

    21:48-21:50

To bear witness about the light. Right?

    21:51-21:51

    That's our job.

    21:51-21:53

See, John the Baptist totally got it.

    21:53-22:00

The guy was mega popular, but he's like, "I'm not the light." Jesus Christ is the light. Follow Him. Go to Him. Believe in Him.

    22:00-22:02

I'm here to witness to Him. It's not me, it's Him.

    22:02-22:04

And that's how ministry works, by the way.

    22:05-22:10

Bearing witness about the light and pointing people to Jesus Christ.

    22:11-22:12

The light that leads to life.

    22:12-22:15

That's our job, church. Pointing to the light.

    22:15-22:18

Pointing people to the light. Directing people to the light.

    22:18-22:21

Do you know Jesus Christ? Do you know who He is? Do you know what He's done?

    22:22-22:29

Pointing people to the light. Taking people to Jesus Jesus deal with them, because that's why He came.

    22:29-22:32

And finally, we saw who is Jesus?

    22:32-22:33

    Well, He's God.

    22:33-22:34

    And what's His purpose?

    22:34-22:36

Well, He came to give life.

    22:36-22:38

Third question we see in the text.

    22:39-22:40

    What's Jesus like?

    22:40-22:42

The answer is He's full of grace and truth.

    22:42-22:43

    Look at verse 14.

    22:44-22:59

It says, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory." Glory as of the only Son from the Father, "Full of..." There it is. "Grace and truth." "The Word became flesh." That's the Christmas story.

    22:59-23:00

    God became a man.

    23:01-23:12

Interestingly, he says, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." Literally, in the original language, it's "The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us." That's a weird way to say that.

    23:12-23:25

Well, when you go back to the Old Testament, you see Moses was instructed to build this tabernacle, This portable building that they tore down and carried with them and set back up.

    23:25-23:30

But part of the tabernacle is where they rested the Ark of the Covenant.

    23:31-23:35

And that's where God's unique presence was in the tabernacle.

    23:36-23:45

So if you were living in Old Testament Israel times and somebody came up to you and said, "Hey, where's God?" You'd point to the tabernacle.

    23:46-23:49

You'd be like, "He's there." That is where God's presence rests.

    23:50-23:59

You see, John says, "The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us." In other words, when Jesus was walking on the earth, where was God's unique presence?

    24:00-24:01

    It was in a person.

    24:01-24:02

    You point to Jesus Christ.

    24:02-24:04

    There's God's presence. There's God right there.

    24:04-24:07

There He is. God is that man.

    24:08-24:15

You're like, "Okay, well, where's God's unique presence today?" The Bible says that our bodies, our hearts, are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

    24:16-24:21

God's unique presence today is in the heart of every believer through the power of His Holy Spirit.

    24:22-24:24

The Word became flesh and tabernacled.

    24:24-24:26

God's unique presence found in one person.

    24:27-24:34

John says, "We have seen His glory." John says, "We saw the glory of God when we looked on the sun." Man, what was that like?

    24:34-24:36

He tells us exactly what Jesus was like.

    24:36-24:42

He says, "Full of grace and truth." Full of grace and truth. Perfectly.

    24:43-24:54

Jesus was 100% perfectly gracious, and at the same time, He was 100% perfectly about the truth of God's Word.

    24:55-24:57

That's sort of hard for us to understand, right?

    24:58-25:03

Because as people, we're a little imbalanced, and we're a little lopsided there, aren't we?

    25:04-25:10

Some people are much grace and little truth.

    25:11-25:14

You're all about grace, not so fired up about the truth.

    25:14-25:16

What happens when you're much grace and little truth?

    25:17-25:18

    Here's what happens - coddling.

    25:18-25:20

    Never holding someone accountable.

    25:21-25:22

    You enable sin.

    25:22-25:25

You ignore the transformation power of the gospel.

    25:26-25:32

We just overlook, "I'll just show grace, just show grace." "But the Bible says..." "We're just going to show them grace." That's lopsided.

    25:33-25:34

    Is that you?

    25:34-25:36

Some people are much truth and little grace.

    25:37-25:39

What happens when you're much truth and little grace?

    25:39-25:40

    You're harsh, right?

    25:41-25:41

    Harsh.

    25:42-25:44

    "There's no room for mistakes!

    25:44-25:50

Look, man, this is what the Bible says, man, and you violated that!" You come across very judgmental.

    25:50-25:56

"Who hears much truth and little grace." Once again, we point to the light of Jesus Christ because we're like, man, He was perfect.

    25:56-25:57

    He had it all.

    25:58-26:06

He was full of grace, and He was full of truth, and it was never one at the expense of another.

    26:06-26:26

And John says, "That's what God is like." full of grace and full of truth." Verse 15, winding down here, "John bore witness about Him and cried out, 'This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after Me ranks before Me because He was before Me.' And from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

    26:26-26:34

For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." No one has ever seen God.

    26:34-26:38

The only God who is at the Father's side, He has made Him known.

    26:38-26:43

Everything you need to know about God, everything, is found in Jesus Christ.

    26:44-26:46

    He has made Him known.

    26:47-26:51

And that's where we're going this year as we go through the Gospel of John.

    26:51-26:53

We want to know God by knowing Jesus.

    26:54-26:57

And not just knowing about Jesus, but knowing Jesus.

    26:58-27:02

Because knowing God through knowing Jesus leads to transformation.

    27:02-27:03

Because it leads to new life.

    27:04-27:10

These three things in this prologue, these three statements about Jesus, permeate the entire book of John.

    27:11-27:12

You're going to see this with every message.

    27:13-27:16

You're going to see these three things, that Jesus is God.

    27:16-27:19

You're going to see that He came to give you eternal life.

    27:19-27:22

You're going to see that He's full of grace and truth.

    27:22-27:23

    Amen, Pastor Jeff.

    27:23-27:25

You seem pretty confident about this stuff.

    27:25-27:26

How do you know that these things are true?

    27:27-27:28

    Because He's made Himself known.

    27:28-27:29

    Let's pray.

    27:30-27:31

Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word.

    27:32-27:42

How lost we would be without Your Word as we sit around and try to define who we think You are, but God, You've given us Your Word so that we would know exactly who You are.

    27:43-27:50

And You've shown up through the person of Jesus Christ to give us life full of grace and truth.

    27:50-27:57

Father, it's my prayer for myself and for this church that we move from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    27:57-28:04

We move from facts on a piece of paper to personal relationship like a child with a father.

    28:04-28:06

Father, we know You're the only one that can do this.

    28:07-28:08

    This is a spiritual matter.

    28:08-28:19

Father, we just lift this congregation up before You and ask, nothing for show, that we would genuinely and sincerely know Jesus Christ.

    28:19-28:22

It's in His glorious name that we pray. Amen.
