All right, so you can turn your Bibles to the book of Job chapter 3.

    01:15-01:16

    Chapter 3.

    01:18-01:23

You know, growing up, my friends and I would pour over the Guinness Book of World Records in the school library.

    01:23-01:26

Did anybody else love reading those massive books?

    01:27-01:27

    Very few of you.

    01:28-01:29

Very few of you are weird like me.

    01:30-01:35

We would be amazed by the sometimes cool and gross accomplishments that people could do.

    01:35-01:37

The amazing things that people were capable of.

    01:38-01:43

and we daydreamed of how we could get into the Guinness Book of World Records.

    01:44-01:48

Well, it took me 34 years, I'm about to break a record.

    01:49-01:55

I'm about to make harvest and personal history this morning, and you're all here to witness it.

    01:55-01:56

    Aren't you so excited?

    01:58-02:14

All right, typically, we preach several verses, maybe even a chapter if we're feeling brave, but my assigned task this morning is to cover 29 chapters in the book of Job as we continue our latest series, Making Sense of Suffering.

    02:15-02:17

I know the Steelers are playing at 1 p.m.

    02:17-02:21

I really hope you weren't planning on watching that because we're gonna be really busy.

    02:22-02:25

You better crack your knuckles and do your stretches 'cause we're about to get after it.

    02:26-02:34

All right, before you start getting claustrophobic and looking for the nearest exit, I cannot possibly cover 724 verses in one sermon.

    02:35-02:40

I mean, I can try it if you want me to, but I'm probably gonna do the overview aspect instead.

    02:40-02:43

Who wants the overview sermon instead of the verse-by-verse sermon?

    02:44-02:46

I don't know, some people seem to want the verse-by-verse sermon.

    02:46-02:47

Well, I didn't prepare for that.

    02:47-02:51

I wasn't expecting that answer, so we're gonna go with the overview approach instead.

    02:52-02:54

So let's stop to ask God for his help.

    02:55-03:04

Please pray for me that I will faithfully proclaim the truth of God's word, and I will pray for you that you faithfully receive and submit the truth of God's word.

    03:05-03:05

    Let's pray.

    03:07-03:15

Father, we come to you and we thank you once again for this awesome opportunity to gather as your people, to worship you and to hear your word.

    03:16-03:22

Father, I pray that you would preach a much better sermon this morning in our hearts than I ever could with my mouth.

    03:22-03:27

Lord, I pray that you would comfort us, you would challenge us, Lord, you would encourage us and you would build us up.

    03:28-03:36

We thank you that you watch over your word to perform it and that when your word goes out, it will accomplish the purpose for which you sent it.

    03:37-03:43

We thank you in advance for what you are going to do, and we ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, amen.

    03:44-03:48

So last week, we left Job at his lowest moment.

    03:49-03:59

Everything has been taken away from him, and he is left in the town dump, scratching himself with pottery as he is covered in sores.

    04:00-04:07

At the end of chapter two, Job's three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, show up on the scene to comfort their suffering friend.

    04:09-04:15

And we're told that they sit with him for a week straight in silence, not saying a single word.

    04:16-04:17

    That's a great decision.

    04:18-04:23

They weep loudly, they cover themselves with dust, and they rip their clothes.

    04:25-04:31

Job then breaks the ice by opening up about the deep despair that he is experiencing on the inside.

    04:32-04:41

And then the seven day wisdom streak comes to a crashing halt as these guys open up their mouths to give their takes on Job's suffering.

    04:42-04:54

The main reason we are covering such a large chunk of chapters in one sermon is due to the fact that most of these verses are filled with unhelpful advice from Job's three friends.

    04:55-05:01

And you may be thinking, how can we be so sure that their advice is unhelpful?

    05:02-05:07

Well, they do say some true and right things, but very often they share half truths.

    05:07-05:11

And we have to understand that half truths are whole lies.

    05:12-05:18

But we can be 100% certain this morning that their advice is unhelpful because the Bible tells us so.

    05:18-05:21

I love it when God makes it so easy for us.

    05:21-05:30

Quick spoiler, as we jump ahead in the story for a minute, God gives Eliphaz a Dutch uncle talk at the very end of Job in chapter 42, verse seven.

    05:30-05:43

He says, "My anger burns against you "and against your two friends, "for you have not spoken to me what is right "as my servant Job has." Could God be any clearer that these guys messed up big time?

    05:44-05:48

Instead of helping their hurting friend, they pour salt into his wounds.

    05:49-05:58

And God then commands these bad friends to go and make a burnt offering for their sinful words and to have Job pray for them.

    05:59-06:03

And God then once again repeats why they must repent in verse eight.

    06:04-06:09

For you have not spoken of me what is right as my servant Job has.

    06:10-06:13

God hates it when you take words out of his mouth.

    06:15-06:18

God hates it when you put words into his mouth.

    06:18-06:26

God is not pleased when you give bad counsel when you cause a sufferer to experience even more suffering.

    06:28-06:30

Here's another preaching verse for me this morning.

    06:31-06:32

I'm not really gonna tell you what to do.

    06:33-06:41

And before you start getting really excited saying, oh, this is gonna be a nice, comfortable, fluffy message, well, remember, we're in the book of Job, so light and fluffy isn't really listed on the menu.

    06:43-06:45

Sure, I promise I'm not really gonna tell you what to do this morning.

    06:45-06:48

Instead, we're gonna focus on what you should never do.

    06:49-07:00

Pastor Jeff's gonna pick up the baton for me next week we're gonna focus on the positive command of do this, but this morning we're gonna zero in on the negative command of don't do that.

    07:02-07:05

When it comes to helping sufferers, I don't want you to be like Job's friends.

    07:06-07:15

You don't wanna be that guy or that girl who makes things worse and not better for those that you love who are struggling.

    07:16-07:23

But the problem is none of us this morning think or that guy, or that gal, as my dad would say.

    07:24-07:27

We all think that we're doing just fine in this area of life.

    07:27-07:35

We all think we're super comforting, super understanding, really loving, Taylor, everybody else in this room probably needs to hear it, but I'm doing great.

    07:37-07:38

    Are you sure about that?

    07:39-07:46

Is it possible that you're misjudging your own heart and giving yourself way too much credit?

    07:47-07:53

Is it possible that you need more help with helping than you realize?

    07:54-08:02

So for the rest of this message, please choose to be brutally honest with yourself as you figure out if you're being that guy or that girl.

    08:04-08:07

So our outline for this morning, how to figure out if you're being that guy.

    08:08-08:13

And the first question we're gonna ask is, do you fail to recognize that you have blind spots?

    08:14-08:18

Do you fail to recognize that you have blind spots?

    08:20-08:24

And these 29 chapters follow a very similar pattern.

    08:24-08:27

There are three cycles of heated debate and discussion.

    08:28-08:37

As I mentioned already, Job kicks off the conversation by popping the hood and showing his friends what he is feeling on the inside.

    08:37-08:40

He is so down the dumps that he doesn't curse God.

    08:41-08:42

    Job never does that.

    08:43-08:45

He curses the day he was born.

    08:47-08:51

Just listen to some of what he has to say in chapter three, verse 11 through 16.

    08:52-08:57

Job says, "Why did I not die at birth, "come out from the womb and expire?

    08:57-09:01

"Why did the knees receive me, "or why the breasts that I should nurse?

    09:01-09:03

"For then I would have lain down and been quiet.

    09:03-09:20

"I would have slept, then I would have been at rest, "with kings and counselors of the earth, "who rebuilt ruins for themselves, "or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver, or why was I not as a hidden stillborn child as infants who never see the light?

    09:22-09:26

The word depression doesn't even seem to touch what Job is experiencing here.

    09:27-09:31

He is in this dark pit, and he can't see any light whatsoever.

    09:33-09:47

And then Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, or the three stooges, as I like to call them, pile on and make matters even worse by giving long speeches to explain why they think Job's life has exploded into a million tiny pieces.

    09:49-09:59

And after each speech, Job responds to what they had to say until in chapter 26 where he's fed up and he gives himself a six chapter long defense of himself.

    09:59-10:04

He puts a bow on the entire conversation and shuts his friends up.

    10:05-10:07

Because in Job's mind, he didn't do anything wrong.

    10:08-10:14

to justify the horrible things that have happened to his family, his livelihood, and even his own body.

    10:16-10:31

And as you read through the lengthy monologues of the three Stooges, it becomes crystal clear that these men fail to recognize two glaring blind spots in their own theology, their own hearts, and their counsel to Job.

    10:33-10:44

So do you fail to recognize you have blind spots, letter A on your outline, by assuming God's plans and people's motives, by assuming God's plans and people's motives.

    10:48-10:50

Have you ever met a know-it-all?

    10:51-10:55

Don't nod or point to the person next to you if they're a know-it-all.

    10:56-10:58

Maybe you're not shaking your head, thinking I don't know any know-it-alls.

    10:58-11:00

I have some bad news for you.

    11:00-11:03

You might be the know-it-all in your family or your friend group.

    11:03-11:06

You can ask for confirmation later after the service is over.

    11:07-11:16

We all know those people who are always ready to correct, who are always ready to insert their opinions, who always point out the flaws in everything.

    11:17-11:29

When you say something, they respond by saying, "Actually, they're always ready to pounce "on what you have to say." And that is exactly how Job's three friends act in these chapters.

    11:29-11:35

They assume that they fully understand the mind of God in the heart of Job.

    11:36-11:44

At the end of his first lecture in chapter five, verse 27, Eliphaz lays out his credentials and explains why Job should listen to him.

    11:45-11:47

He said, "Behold, this we have searched out.

    11:47-11:58

"It is true, hear and know it for your good." Chapter 15, verses nine through 10, Eliphaz gets really fired up that Job isn't responding to their advice.

    11:58-12:01

He says, "What do you know that we do not know?

    12:02-12:16

"What do you understand that is not clear to us, "both the gray-haired and the aged are among you, "older than your father." In other words, Job, who are you to disagree with us?

    12:16-12:21

We're older, we're wiser, just sit down, shut up, and listen.

    12:24-12:27

You can't miss the air of arrogance there, right?

    12:27-12:30

You can't miss the know-it-all attitude.

    12:31-12:39

And this overconfidence leads them to take some wild swings at Job's character, which we'll talk about more in a few minutes.

    12:39-12:44

This overconfidence leads them to think way too highly of themselves.

    12:45-12:51

And without even realizing it, they put themselves in the place of God himself.

    12:53-12:56

And Job calls this out in chapter 13, verse seven.

    12:57-13:03

He says, "Will you speak falsely for God and speak deceitfully for him.

    13:05-13:18

As I was meditating upon this verse this past week, I couldn't help but think back to 2005 and the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when so many professing Christians put their foot completely in their mouths.

    13:18-13:32

After this devastating hurricane hits New Orleans, all these radio preachers, all these televangelists say they know exactly why this hurricane hit New Orleans, because of the homosexual community that lives there.

    13:33-13:39

In their minds, there is no arguing that this is exactly why this tragedy took place.

    13:42-13:54

Listen, we spent two months recently walking through the Book of Micah and studying the reality that our country has been experiencing the consequences of rejecting God and pursuing evil.

    13:54-13:55

    There is no denying that.

    13:57-14:06

But we cannot make unwise assumptions and unproven declarations about things that God has not clearly revealed in his word.

    14:08-14:14

My main question to those people who definitively declared why Hurricane Katrina happened has always been the same.

    14:14-14:16

    How do you know that?

    14:17-14:18

    Who told you that?

    14:19-14:21

Did God invite you to a secret council meeting in heaven?

    14:22-14:24

Did he send you an angel, Graham?

    14:25-14:25

    No?

    14:25-14:27

    Then stop talking about it.

    14:28-14:31

Stop saying things that God did not clearly say.

    14:31-14:35

Stop puffing yourself up and start humbling yourself.

    14:37-14:39

Stop being a know-it-all because no one likes a know-it-all.

    14:41-14:45

But unfortunately, all of us struggle with being know-it-alls more than we care to admit.

    14:47-14:56

We all need to do some soul searching this morning and do the hard work of asking others to point out our blind spots because we can't see them in and of ourselves.

    14:58-15:05

You know, I sometimes can make wrong assumptions about why God chose to do something or why he didn't choose to do something.

    15:06-15:11

As if I have the right, as if I have the intelligence to make such a judgment call.

    15:13-15:25

I can sometimes judge the heart of someone else and assume their motives, Even though scripture makes it so clear in 1 Samuel 16, seven, the Lord sees not as man sees.

    15:26-15:31

Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.

    15:33-15:39

When someone irritates me, when someone annoys me, I can think, oh, they're just trying to get, they're trying to get under my skin.

    15:40-15:43

They don't respect me, and they're just trying to really just stick it to me.

    15:46-15:52

a family member or a friend is moping around and I think to myself, they don't always wanna be the center of attention.

    15:53-15:55

You know, they're probably not even struggling, they probably just want me to ask them what's wrong.

    15:56-15:59

I'm just so tired of playing their games 'cause their heart is not in the right place.

    16:02-16:08

I can judge someone else's heart, but fail to see that my heart is in trouble and should be my primary concern.

    16:09-16:18

My desire to be right, my desire to justify myself, causes me to assume the worst of others and treat them very poorly.

    16:21-16:23

Does anyone else ever assume the motives of other people?

    16:25-16:27

Do you ever think that you know someone else's heart?

    16:30-16:42

If we truly wanna help other people, especially those who are suffering, we must have a posture of humility and compassion and not a posture of pride and cold-heartedness.

    16:43-16:49

You will not be able to help anyone with anything until you realize that you are not that smart.

    16:51-17:00

You will not understand people and their problems until you grasp the truth that people and their problems are far more complex than they first appear.

    17:03-17:06

The more mature you become, the more immature you should find yourself.

    17:07-17:12

The more you learn, the more you should realize how little you actually know.

    17:14-17:17

So do you fail to recognize you have blind spots?

    17:17-17:22

Letter B on your outline, by having unbiblical and unhelpful convictions.

    17:23-17:27

By having unbiblical and unhelpful convictions.

    17:29-17:35

You know, during my time at Geneva College, I was one of the leaders of an on-campus ministry called Upper Room.

    17:35-17:40

I'll never forget this one particular meeting, I had to lead a breakout prayer group.

    17:40-17:44

and I asked everyone in the group to share their prayer requests.

    17:46-17:52

And one guy said something that stopped me completely in my tracks and froze me up 'cause I didn't really know what to say.

    17:53-17:59

He said, "You know, I've really had this burden "on my heart lately to pray for Satan.

    18:00-18:03

"He is just so lost and headed for destruction.

    18:03-18:08

"We should pray for his salvation." Pause the story for a minute.

    18:09-18:11

Has anyone ever heard that prayer request before?

    18:12-18:14

Okay, that was a first and a last for me.

    18:14-18:18

You can see why at 20 years old I was like, I have no idea what to say here.

    18:21-18:23

Okay, press play on the story again.

    18:23-18:35

And so I finally gather my thoughts, after really not knowing what to say, and I told this guy as lovingly, yet gently as I could, that Satan is unredeemable, and we shouldn't waste our breath praying for that jerk.

    18:38-18:40

He is God's enemy and that's not gonna change.

    18:42-18:45

It was glaringly obvious that this guy wasn't taught very well.

    18:45-18:48

And he had some very bad theology.

    18:50-18:55

You know, bad thinking will always come out of your mouth in bad speaking.

    18:56-19:01

His bad theology led him to give some very bad counsel to the prayer group.

    19:01-19:04

I had to shot block it to protect everybody in the group.

    19:06-19:08

And we see this happen with Job's friends.

    19:08-19:12

Bad theology leading to bad counseling.

    19:13-19:24

They had very bad theology when it came to suffering in general, which led them to give very bad counsel to Job in the midst of his suffering.

    19:26-19:31

Their distortive view of suffering can be broken down into two sides of the same coin.

    19:31-19:32

Make sure to write this down.

    19:33-19:42

All success is a result of your obedience, and all suffering is a result of your sin.

    19:43-19:43

    We say it again.

    19:44-19:53

All success is a result of your obedience, and all suffering is a result of your sin.

    19:56-20:04

And there is no better way to summarize the bad theology of the three stooges than to read chapter four, verses seven through nine.

    20:04-20:06

Listen to what Eliphaz has to ask Job.

    20:08-20:13

Remember who that was innocent ever perished, or where were the upright cut off?

    20:13-20:17

As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.

    20:18-20:23

By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.

    20:24-20:28

In other words, Job, buddy, you believe the same things that we do.

    20:28-20:33

You know that good people do not have bad things like this happen to them.

    20:34-20:38

You must have done something to deserve it.

    20:41-20:45

Bildad really crosses the line and goes to the jugular in chapter eight, verse four.

    20:47-20:48

Can't imagine saying this to a friend.

    20:49-20:55

If your children have sinned against God, he has delivered them into the hand of their transgressions.

    20:57-21:01

In other words, Job, your kids died because they sinned against God.

    21:01-21:03

    They got what they deserve.

    21:03-21:05

    There is no other explanation.

    21:06-21:08

What a loving and caring friend.

    21:10-21:15

And then Zophar steps up to the plate to offer this doozy in chapter 11, verse six.

    21:15-21:22

"Know then that God exacts of you "less than your guilt deserves." Job, you think this is bad?

    21:22-21:23

    You deserve way worse.

    21:24-21:26

God should have done more to you.

    21:29-21:35

To Job's three friends, the formula for success and suffering is very simple and it can't be argued with.

    21:36-21:39

The equation is like two plus two equals four.

    21:40-21:45

Good intentions plus good actions equal success.

    21:47-21:51

While bad intentions and bad actions always equal suffering.

    21:53-21:58

You know, this theology didn't just end with Job's friends, but it's alive and well today.

    22:00-22:07

Do you know that there are pastors and churches in this area that tell you that you are still sick because you don't have enough faith in God?

    22:09-22:16

You don't have a lot of money because you don't have confidence, you don't truly believe that God wants you to be abundantly wealthy.

    22:17-22:20

You are suffering because your faith is not strong enough.

    22:23-22:28

If you do the right thing, God is obligated to give you a life that is all smooth sailing.

    22:31-22:35

Please hear me when I say this, that line of thinking is stupid.

    22:36-22:41

It is unbiblical, it is overly simplistic, and it is not true.

    22:41-22:47

You see in Scripture that all the righteous and holy people suffer the most, not the least.

    22:50-22:57

Yes, suffering is always a result of sin, but suffering is not always a result of your own sin.

    22:59-23:04

Yes, sometimes you are in pain because you're reaping the consequences of very bad decisions.

    23:05-23:12

Your marriage is terrible because you belittle your spouse, because you lust after women online.

    23:13-23:15

You get fired from your job because of laziness.

    23:16-23:20

You're lonely because you drink way too much and push people away.

    23:21-23:23

Who is at fault for that?

    23:23-23:25

Who is responsible for that suffering?

    23:26-23:28

The person looking right back at you in the mirror.

    23:30-23:33

You can also suffer because of other people's sins.

    23:34-23:38

You lose out on the big promotion because a coworker lied about you to the boss.

    23:39-23:50

Someone that you thought was your best friend stabs you in the back and slanders your good name, and for some reason, everyone believes him or her, even though you did nothing wrong.

    23:52-23:55

And finally, you can suffer because of the sinfulness of this broken world.

    23:57-24:03

You have a sudden heart attack out of nowhere, even though you never smoked, you ate clean, you worked out your entire life.

    24:04-24:09

You lose a loved one due to a car accident, even though they obeyed the rules of the road.

    24:10-24:15

You miscarry a child that you deeply love and you pray for.

    24:17-24:23

You didn't do anything to bring these things upon yourself, No one else sinned against you either.

    24:25-24:29

But the shadow of this fallen world has touched you nonetheless, and you have no idea why.

    24:32-24:39

Job's friends failed to consider the complexity of sin and the complexity of this broken world.

    24:39-24:44

And this failure led them to adopt some very unbiblical convictions.

    24:45-24:49

And unbiblical convictions proved to be unhelpful without exception.

    24:51-24:56

And in this case, their unbiblical convictions were aggressively unhelpful.

    24:57-25:02

Instead of pulling Job up in love, they push him down with their lies.

    25:05-25:06

And here's the problem this morning.

    25:07-25:10

These guys were blind to their unbiblical convictions.

    25:11-25:15

They were blind to their bad theology, and so were we.

    25:16-25:22

If I asked you to raise your hand this morning, if you possess some bad theology, how many hands would go up?

    25:23-25:24

    Zero, none.

    25:25-25:32

But I guarantee that many of you have bad thinking in your minds that is resulting in bad sharing from your mouths.

    25:33-25:37

Bad sharing that makes hard situations even harder.

    25:37-25:44

Bad sharing that intensifies problems and gives even more pain to already hurting people.

    25:46-25:49

This is why you need to grow in your ability to discern.

    25:50-25:53

Pastor Jeff has talked about this so much over the past few months.

    25:53-25:58

You need to be able to discern what is biblical from that which is unbiblical.

    25:59-26:09

This is why you need to be in a small group, to be in community with other believers who can sharpen you and point out your blind spots and point out your unbiblical convictions.

    26:10-26:15

This is why you need to be in the word of God every single day and not just on Sundays.

    26:17-26:26

There is nothing more dangerous than misinformed and undiscerning Christians who have a passion to share what they think they know.

    26:29-26:33

But by God's grace, he's still at work in the midst of our foolishness.

    26:35-26:49

I wanna wrap up this point by reevaluating the question that Eliphaz asked Job in chapter four, verse seven, which must have seemed so profound at the time, but should appear very foolish to us as Christians in 2024.

    26:49-26:51

    Read this with different eyes.

    26:52-26:59

Jehovah, remember who that was innocent ever perished or where were the upright cut off.

    27:00-27:03

What is the Sunday school answer to this question?

    27:04-27:05

    Jesus Christ.

    27:06-27:08

All right, Aliphaz, when has the righteous ever suffered?

    27:09-27:12

When has someone never done anything wrong and have been rejected for it?

    27:12-27:13

    Oh, I don't know.

    27:13-27:14

    How about God himself?

    27:15-27:21

Jesus Christ is the only innocent and righteous person who has ever walked the face of this planet.

    27:22-27:26

And yet he willingly perished in our place and on our behalf.

    27:27-27:36

He was completely upright, but he was cut down and cut off on the cross to save wicked sinners like you and me.

    27:39-27:40

    Scripture makes it so clear.

    27:41-28:12

2 Corinthians 5, 21, "For our sake he made him, Jesus, "to be no sin, who knew no sin, "so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." 1 John 3, 5, "You know that he, Jesus, "appeared in order to take away sins, "and in him there is no sin." 1 Peter 3, 18, "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous that he might bring us to God.

    28:14-28:21

This question from Eliphaz, which he asked in foolish ignorance, gets to the very heart of the gospel.

    28:22-28:25

It points to the very heart of our Savior.

    28:26-28:35

And if you're here this morning and you have not yet turned away from your sin and trusted in Christ for salvation, I am so glad that you're here.

    28:36-28:37

Now I wanna talk to you for a minute.

    28:39-28:41

I'm gonna say something that's not very popular nowadays.

    28:42-28:45

You are not a good person deep down.

    28:46-28:47

Sorry to break it to you.

    28:48-28:49

    You are not innocent.

    28:50-28:52

    You are not righteous.

    28:52-28:56

You have sinned against a perfect and holy God.

    28:56-29:01

You are unrighteous in your thinking, in your speaking, and your living.

    29:02-29:03

    That's the bad news.

    29:04-29:14

The good news is you can become holy and righteous and innocent in the eyes of God this very moment if you submit to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

    29:16-29:19

Your list of blameless, your list of blame is endless.

    29:20-29:27

But the blameless Son of God will wipe it away in a millisecond if you turn to Him for salvation.

    29:30-29:32

Because apart from Christ, you don't just have blind spots.

    29:33-29:38

you are completely blind to the truth of God's word and the glories of the cross.

    29:39-29:48

I've been praying for you all week that the Lord would bring you here this morning, that your spiritual sight would be restored as you look to Christ for the very first time.

    29:53-29:54

So how to figure out if you're being that guy?

    29:55-29:57

Second question on our outline today.

    29:58-30:00

Do you mean well but fail to comfort well?

    30:01-30:03

Do you mean well but fail to comfort well?

    30:07-30:13

At this point in the sermon, you may be thinking, Taylor, I don't really relate to Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar.

    30:13-30:15

I mean, I have good motivations.

    30:16-30:17

    I don't assume God's plans.

    30:17-30:19

    I don't judge other people's hearts.

    30:20-30:24

I really think my heart is in the right place, so I don't think I'm being that guy or that girl.

    30:26-30:31

Well, that's great to hear, but sometimes your right intentions don't translate well into right actions.

    30:32-30:34

And let me explain it to you this way.

    30:34-30:38

My almost three-year-old daughter, Emmy, loves to help my wife clean.

    30:39-30:41

And I use the air quotes very purposefully.

    30:42-30:48

That girl has such a heart for tidying up the house, but her cleaning leaves a lot to be desired.

    30:49-30:55

She'll try to help clean up after dinner and she'll rub ketchup into the table.

    30:55-30:58

She'll get blueberries all throughout her hair somehow.

    30:59-31:03

Last week I was raking leaves, she just knocked over my bag and ruined all my progress.

    31:04-31:08

She uses the handheld vacuum, drops it, dust and debris, gets everywhere.

    31:10-31:15

Emmy's heart is certainly in the right place, but her actual cleaning leaves much to be desired.

    31:17-31:24

And I think a lot of us are in the same boat as Emmy this morning when it comes to helping those who are suffering.

    31:25-31:30

Our hearts are in the right place, but our comforting needs a lot of improvement.

    31:31-31:38

We try to help clean up a very messy situation, but we end up making it even messier in the process.

    31:41-31:44

So let's get practical by dealing with how we can fail to comfort well.

    31:45-31:53

Do you mean well to fail to comfort well, letter A, by talking way too much, by talking way too much.

    31:56-32:02

In chapter 16, verses two through three, Job gets fed up with all of his friends' lectures.

    32:03-32:05

And he says, "I have heard many such things.

    32:06-32:08

    "Miserable comforters are you all.

    32:08-32:16

"Shall windy words have an end, "or what provokes that you answer?" In other words, you guys can stop trying to make me feel better because you stink at it.

    32:17-32:20

How much longer do you have to talk, 'cause I can't stomach much more.

    32:22-32:24

These guys fell for one of the classic blunders.

    32:25-32:27

they couldn't keep their mouths shut.

    32:29-32:32

They lectured far better than they listened.

    32:33-32:38

They could barely wait for Job to stop talking so that they could start talking.

    32:40-32:44

You know, some of us in this room or watching online are more reserved and we don't talk a lot.

    32:45-32:49

And there are others of us who are a bit more chatty and you know exactly who you are.

    32:49-32:54

And those of us who are more chatty should really listen to what Job has to say in chapter 13, verse five.

    32:55-32:56

You can make this your life verse for this week.

    32:57-33:00

Oh that you would keep silent and it would be your wisdom.

    33:03-33:07

Sometimes the wisest thing to say is nothing.

    33:09-33:16

This is good advice for any area of life, but especially when it comes to loving those who are walking through the dark valleys of life.

    33:18-33:20

Do you mean well but fail to comfort well?

    33:20-33:23

Letter B, by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

    33:24-33:27

by saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

    33:31-33:36

At this point, you may be thinking, well, Taylor, I can't just be completely silent when comforting someone.

    33:36-33:38

I have to say something, right?

    33:40-33:47

We all know that really awkward, uncomfortable moment when someone is grieving, going through a loss, and we have no idea what to say.

    33:50-33:55

And unintentionally, we can say some very ignorant and unhelpful things.

    33:56-34:05

Most, not all of us have been on the receiving end of that, and some of us have been on the giving end of that, of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

    34:06-34:26

A couple with a kid or two finds out they can't biologically have any more children, and a well-meaning relative says, "Well, at least you already have kids." A 60-year-old is diagnosed with a very serious illness, And a well-meaning member of their church says, well, at least you had all those years of health.

    34:27-34:27

    Count your blessings.

    34:30-34:33

Someone loses their spouse and they feel like half a person now.

    34:34-34:39

And someone at the funeral says, well, at least you had all those years with your husband or your wife.

    34:39-34:40

At least they're not suffering anymore.

    34:42-34:45

Quick poll, are any of these comments helpful on any level?

    34:46-34:48

    No, they are extremely unhelpful.

    34:48-34:54

If your attempt to comfort starts with at least The least you can do is keep it to yourself.

    34:56-34:57

And I'm not pointing fingers here.

    34:58-35:00

I can be guilty of this as well.

    35:01-35:03

I've recently realized I can be an upsider.

    35:04-35:08

I try to point out the silver lining in every bad situation.

    35:08-35:10

I try to point out the upside.

    35:12-35:16

And sometimes that can be helpful, but other times it can be downright hurtful.

    35:17-35:21

And I certainly mean well by pointing out the upside.

    35:22-35:26

but I often don't comfort well by pointing out the upside.

    35:27-35:33

More often than not, sufferers just need you to sit with them as they experience the downside.

    35:34-35:41

Acknowledge their grief, agree that the situation is hard and they have every right to be sad.

    35:42-35:54

If you attend a viewing, if you show up at the hospital, if you're first on scene as a loved one is unraveling, I can guarantee you one thing that Pastor Jeff shared with me years ago.

    35:56-36:01

They will most likely forget everything that you said, but they will never forget that you were there.

    36:03-36:08

They need your comforting presence far more than they need your chatty presentations.

    36:10-36:13

Remember, that's what Job's friends did very well in the very beginning, right?

    36:13-36:20

They got a gold star for comforting until they opened their mouths to say the wrong things at the wrong time.

    36:22-36:25

All right, finally, do you mean well but fail to comfort well?

    36:25-36:29

Let her see by saying the right thing in the wrong way.

    36:30-36:32

By saying the right thing in the wrong way.

    36:36-36:45

As I said earlier, Job's friends do say some true and right things, but they often say these true and right things in the completely wrong way.

    36:46-36:48

Job highlights this in chapter six, verse 14.

    36:49-36:54

He who withholds kindness from a friend forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

    36:55-37:05

Even if Job's suffering was a result of his sin, which it wasn't, his friend should have handled him with much more care, consideration, and love.

    37:06-37:12

Romans 2.4 is very clear that it's God's kindness that leads people to repentance, not our jerkiness.

    37:13-37:19

Job was like a fragile vase on the verge of breaking and his friends approached him like bulls in a china shop.

    37:20-37:24

Their tone was very often judgmental, unkind, and impatient.

    37:26-37:34

And this should serve as a lesson to us that we need to be cautious of not just what we say, but how we say it.

    37:35-37:42

Our tone, our posture, our faces communicate just as much, if not more, than our words do.

    37:44-37:45

Let me prove this to you.

    37:46-37:52

I'm going to say the same thing in three different ways, and you're going to tell me how I come across in each example.

    37:52-37:53

    That sound good?

    37:53-37:54

    We get it?

    37:54-37:54

    All right.

    37:55-37:55

    You ready?

    37:56-37:57

    That's great!

    37:58-37:59

How did I come across there?

    38:01-38:02

    Positive, happy, excited?

    38:03-38:04

    How about this one?

    38:05-38:05

    That's great.

    38:07-38:08

    What do we think?

    38:09-38:09

    Sarcastic?

    38:11-38:12

    How about this?

    38:13-38:14

    That's great.

    38:15-38:18

    Sad, indifferent, bitter.

    38:19-38:23

But I said the same exact thing in each of those examples.

    38:24-38:31

But the way I changed my face, the way I changed my voice totally changes the message that I'm communicating.

    38:31-38:35

Do you see how easy it is to be misinterpreted, to be misunderstood?

    38:37-38:40

You don't wanna communicate the wrong thing to someone who is suffering.

    38:41-38:43

You don't want to come across as uncaring.

    38:44-38:51

You don't want them to think that you'd rather be anywhere else in the world right now than sitting with me and listening to what I am going through.

    38:52-38:57

You don't want a good word to be ruined by a bad delivery.

    38:57-39:00

You don't want to say the right thing in the wrong way.

    39:03-39:12

Well, as we come to the end of this message, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by how much you tend to be that guy or that girl.

    39:13-39:16

I know I am overwhelmed by how much I tend to be that guy.

    39:17-39:22

You may feel like it's hopeless to offer comfort to someone who is struggling.

    39:23-39:29

You may feel like it's hopeless to make a difference in someone's life who's really in a dark struggle.

    39:32-39:45

But instead of avoiding sufferers or turning away from their uncomfortable situations, I want to encourage you to run into the arms of your Lord and Savior, who always knows what to say and do.

    39:45-39:50

Jesus Christ has never been and will never be that guy.

    39:51-39:54

He knows exactly what you need as you suffer.

    39:56-39:59

He knows exactly what the people around you need as they suffer.

    40:01-40:06

Listen to how Jesus is described in Isaiah 42, verses two through three.

    40:06-40:07

    I love these verses.

    40:08-40:12

He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice or make it heard in the street.

    40:13-40:19

A bruised reed he will not break, and a faintly burning wick he will not quench.

    40:21-40:24

Harvest, Jesus knows how weak we really are.

    40:26-40:30

We are like brittle branches that are so close to breaking.

    40:30-40:35

We are like candles that are almost out of wax and one breath away.

    40:36-40:37

    from being extinguished.

    40:38-40:42

But Christ wraps us with his mighty hand so that hope will not be blown out.

    40:44-40:46

And the worship team can make their way forward.

    40:48-40:58

The amazing thing to me is that Jesus wants to use you and me as his agents of peace and comfort in a chaotic and tormented world.

    41:00-41:07

Jesus wants to share his comfort through you to that family that's been devastated by a suicide or a drug overdose.

    41:08-41:16

He wants to communicate the truth of his word to that neighbor who is suffering in silence down the street through your faithful witnessing.

    41:17-41:28

He wants to impress his unconditional love upon that teenager in your house or in this church who feels isolated and depressed through your caring presence.

    41:29-41:34

Do not turn away from this amazing privilege It's a massive responsibility.

    41:36-41:38

Realize that you can't do it on your own.

    41:39-41:48

Without Jesus Christ and growing closer to him, you will continue to be just like Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar.

    41:48-41:58

But with Jesus, you can and will delicately handle those who desperately need what only he has to offer.

    41:59-42:00

    Let's pray.

    42:03-42:04

    Father, we come to you.

    42:06-42:12

We all admit that we contend to be that guy or that girl who makes sufferers experience even more suffering.

    42:13-42:15

The Lord, we can wrongly assume what you're up to.

    42:16-42:18

We can judge other people's hearts.

    42:18-42:21

We can mean well but fail to comfort well.

    42:24-42:33

Lord, for those of us in this room who are suffering, who are going through the valley of the shadow of death, Lord, may they find the comfort that you alone have to offer.

    42:33-42:36

And may they find it at Harvest Bible Chapel through your people.

    42:38-42:41

And may all of us become more like Jesus Christ.

    42:43-42:49

Help us to lean into him and trust that he will guide us.

    42:49-42:57

He will lead us, that your Holy Spirit will help us to know what to say and do and what to not say and what not to do.

    42:58-43:00

And we ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ.

Open up those Bibles to Job chapter two.

    01:15-01:17

And while you're turning there, let's just pause for a moment.

    01:17-01:26

I'm going to ask that you would please pray for me to faithfully and clearly communicate the word of God.

    01:27-01:34

And I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive what it is that God wants to teach us in his word today.

    01:34-01:35

    All right, let's pray.

    01:39-01:56

Father in heaven, it's easy for us to get defensive or make excuses when we are addressing a touchy subject.

    02:00-02:02

We might not wanna hear what your word has to say.

    02:04-02:18

But I just pray, Father, that we would be able to come here with a heart that sincerely wants to hear from you, and that we would receive whatever it is you tell us through your Word.

    02:18-02:21

It's not about what I think or my opinion.

    02:25-02:26

It's really not about anybody's opinion.

    02:28-02:31

It's about what you have declared to be true.

    02:32-02:36

So Father, give us hearts and minds that want nothing but that.

    02:43-02:52

We praise you, Father, for what you're going to do through your Word, through the power of your Holy Spirit conforming us into the image of your Son.

    02:54-02:57

Father, thank you in Jesus' name, Amen.

    02:59-03:00

    Job chapter two.

    03:04-03:15

If you were here last week, we went through Job chapter one and we met Job, who was a godly and wealthy man.

    03:17-03:28

We saw this peak behind the curtain where Satan went before the Lord and questioned Job's motives for worshiping God.

    03:29-03:32

Does he worship you because you're God and you're worthy of worship?

    03:33-03:36

Or does he worship you because you give to him?

    03:39-03:43

Well, Satan was permitted to take away from Job, but not to touch him.

    03:46-03:50

And we saw in Job chapter one, four waves of tragedy.

    03:53-03:57

    There were attacks from man.

    03:58-04:02

There were what we call natural disasters or freak accidents.

    04:02-04:10

And in one day, Job lost all of his wealth and all 10 of his kids, one day.

    04:13-04:14

    But he still worshiped.

    04:17-04:18

Now let's look at chapter two.

    04:20-04:28

I kind of wish Job's story ended before this, but here we go.

    04:29-04:37

Chapter two says, "Again, there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord.

    04:38-04:43

And Satan also came among them to present himself before the Lord.

    04:43-05:05

And the Lord said to Satan, 'From where have you come?' Satan answered the Lord and said, "From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down on it." Like, wait, wait, in this passage that we covered last week, no, this is not deja vu.

    05:05-05:08

This is another heavenly council meeting.

    05:08-05:10

We talked a little bit about that last week.

    05:11-05:14

And I don't know how long it's been since the last one.

    05:14-05:16

    The Bible doesn't tell us.

    05:17-05:24

But what we do see, same question from God, same answer from Satan, where have you been, what have you been doing?

    05:26-05:27

    Look at verse three.

    05:29-05:41

And the Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, "that there is none like him on the earth, "a blameless and upright man who fears God "and turns away from evil?

    05:43-06:00

"He still holds fast his integrity, although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason." Same commendation as last time, but notice the Lord added a statement.

    06:00-06:06

He still, he still, you should underline that in your Bible.

    06:06-06:13

He still, meaning the Lord is saying that despite everything that Job went through.

    06:15-06:17

His inside still matches the outside.

    06:18-06:20

    Job proved his sincerity.

    06:20-06:21

We're gonna get back to that.

    06:21-06:22

    Look at verse four.

    06:23-06:38

It says, "Then Satan answered the Lord and said, "'Skin for skin, all that a man has, "'he will give for his life.'" What's Satan saying here?

    06:38-06:51

He's saying that a man's life, His physical wellbeing is worth way more than anything and everything that he owns.

    06:53-06:55

    That's a true statement, right?

    06:56-06:58

    Like just imagine this scenario.

    06:58-07:10

Imagine you were diagnosed with terminal cancer and you went to the doctor and the doctor said, "Yeah, I can treat you and I can cure that.

    07:11-07:17

"It's gonna cost you everything in your bank account." Show of hands, how many people would pay it?

    07:19-07:21

    Yeah, right?

    07:22-07:25

Like, yeah, I'll pay any amount.

    07:27-07:27

    That's Satan's point.

    07:29-07:41

That's why he started this statement saying, "Skin for skin." It was an expression meaning that you're willing to sacrifice someone else's skin if it means saving your own skin.

    07:44-07:49

Satan goes, yeah, yeah, okay, so, all right, his stuff was taken away, but you know what, Lord?

    07:49-07:54

    A man's life and a man's health is a man's greatest possession.

    07:56-07:56

    That's the claim.

    07:57-07:57

    Look at verse five.

    07:59-08:08

He says, "But stretch out your hand "and touch his bone and his flesh, "and he will curse you to your face." Here's Satan's new claim.

    08:08-08:13

He goes, "Look, okay, anybody can recover "from losing his stuff, right?

    08:16-08:17

"But what if he loses his health?

    08:18-08:28

"Then, then he will curse you to your face." Satan is persistent.

    08:31-08:39

And truth be told, after he lost in chapter one, He should have just immediately conceded defeat.

    08:44-08:47

After the trials of chapter one, Satan said, "You know what, Lord?

    08:49-08:50

    "You're right, you're right.

    08:51-08:52

    "Job is legit.

    08:54-08:55

    "But Satan's persistent.

    08:57-08:58

    "And Satan is malicious.

    09:00-09:02

"And he's not content to stop.

    09:02-09:04

"He's gonna keep upping the ante.

    09:04-09:13

So listen, my friends, don't expect, if you're going through some hard trial in your life right now, that once you get through it, it's gonna be smooth sailing to heaven.

    09:16-09:17

    Doesn't work that way.

    09:21-09:25

In fact, if Job's story is any indication, it's probably gonna get worse for you.

    09:27-09:28

    Look at verse six.

    09:30-09:55

"And the Lord said to Satan, 'Behold, he is in your hand.' "Only spare his life." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord. And again, we saw this last week. Satan makes this evil, wicked, malicious bet, and God goes with it.

    10:00-10:03

    He permits Satan to proceed.

    10:04-10:05

    He gives him parameters again.

    10:05-10:16

Notice he says, "Okay, you can touch him, "but do not kill him." And I gotta tell you, look, if I was God, I would've cut this off at this point.

    10:17-10:20

I mean, if I was God, I would've said, "You know what, that's enough.

    10:20-10:21

    "That's enough.

    10:21-10:22

    "He's suffered enough.

    10:22-10:24

    "He proved himself enough.

    10:24-10:27

"Knock it off." That's what I would've said.

    10:29-10:40

You see, the Lord went a bit of a different route because his glory is more important than our comfort.

    10:42-10:49

See, the question on the table is this, is God worthy of worship?

    10:52-10:57

And after the events of chapter one, we're like, you know what, yeah, I think so.

    10:59-11:06

Pretty sure, but now this scene is setting up we have to be absolutely sure.

    11:09-11:12

Will a man worship God because God is worthy of worship?

    11:14-11:17

Or does a man only worship God if he gets something out of it?

    11:20-11:21

Well, look at verse seven again.

    11:21-11:41

He says, "Satan went up in the presence of the Lord and struck Job with loathsome sores, from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head." He previously says Satan left God and there was a day.

    11:41-11:44

Here it seems that there was an immediate attack.

    11:44-11:52

It seems here there's no time wasted, that he goes straight from God's presence to attack Job.

    11:55-12:43

the agents that Satan used were humans and nature, but this looks like it was just a direct attack. Like, "Well, what are these loathsome sores?" Well, we don't really know the exact diagnosis of them. There's been a lot of speculation. Is this some form of leprosy or something like that? We don't know, but does it really matter if we have the exact diagnosis. Look at verse 8, it says, "And he took a piece of broken pottery with which to scrape himself while he sat in the ashes." Sat in the ashes, that's the burning rubbish heap that's like the place that Jesus used to compare to hell.

    12:46-12:50

And he scratched himself with broken pottery.

    12:52-13:00

Here's a man who was prominent and wealthy and had everything, and now he's sitting in the garbage dump scratching himself with garbage.

    13:03-13:07

    He's just completely broken now.

    13:08-13:13

Everything about Job is broken now.

    13:17-13:56

what else can you take from them? Because if you kill them, we're not going to get our answer. If a man will find God worthy of worship just because he's God. I wish this story ended here, but Job has another trial, and I can tell you this with complete confidence and complete conviction that of everything that Job experienced to this point, the thing that comes next is the absolute worst thing that Job experienced.

    13:59-14:00

    A sideways wife.

    14:05-14:07

Some of you men were afraid to laugh at that.

    14:09-14:10

And I commend you for that.

    14:14-14:15

    Look at verse nine.

    14:16-14:23

It says, "Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity?

    14:23-14:33

"Curse God and die." Interestingly, she asked exactly what God declared in verse three.

    14:36-14:38

Do you still hold fast your integrity?

    14:38-14:52

She goes, "Just die." Now, if you're familiar with the story though, I think a lot of us get to this point where like, "Oh, I know what's coming.

    14:53-14:54

    Here comes the nasty wife.

    14:56-14:57

    Should be supporting him.

    14:57-15:10

Instead, she's piling on." And I just want to encourage you to not be so quick to judge Job's wife, because remember, She just lost 10 kids too.

    15:12-15:25

And I could imagine, like a lot of us, when you're speaking under extreme stress, maybe things come out your mouth the way you don't want them to come out.

    15:27-15:29

So let's pump the brakes on judging her.

    15:30-15:39

Whatever her motive was, and I can't speak to her motive, but whatever her motive was, She became the mouthpiece of Satan's temptation.

    15:40-15:46

She was telling Job to do what Satan wanted Job to do, curse God.

    15:46-15:47

    Just curse God.

    15:47-15:50

Look, Job, you've suffered enough, okay?

    15:51-15:53

    Apparently, God doesn't care.

    15:53-15:57

So just curse him and cash in already, okay?

    15:57-15:59

    Enough, enough of this.

    16:02-16:03

    Look at verse 10.

    16:06-16:13

And he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak." Okay, let's stop there for a second.

    16:15-16:17

Because I did a lot of reading this week.

    16:17-16:20

I did a lot of reading, especially about this verse.

    16:21-16:23

Because this verse is sort of the crux of the whole thing.

    16:23-16:24

You'll see it on the outline.

    16:24-16:35

So what I found when I read so many commentators, incidentally, men that I read.

    16:37-16:45

Immediately rushed to Job's side to say, "Look, what Job said right here wasn't mean." Look at it again.

    16:45-16:55

He says to his wife, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak." And so many commentators are like, "Well, no, he wasn't being mean, okay?

    16:56-16:59

    He didn't call her foolish.

    17:00-17:11

He was saying that you speak as a foolish woman." Some commentators said, you know, what Job was saying was, it was really kind of a compliment.

    17:12-17:15

He was saying, what you're saying is beneath you.

    17:16-17:18

    You're better than that.

    17:20-17:23

This statement isn't worthy of you.

    17:23-17:30

You know, I would expect such advice from a fool, but not from you, cupcake.

    17:31-17:33

    (congregation laughing)

    17:35-17:48

So I read so many commentators that just lined up to defend Job, to say, "Look, what he said wasn't mean, "and it wasn't harsh." So I tried it.

    17:51-17:51

    (congregation laughing)

    17:54-18:02

Aaron came up to me this past week, and she made some observation about something.

    18:02-18:06

I don't remember quite the subject matter and you'll understand why this escaped me now.

    18:06-18:13

But she shared something with me and I said, "Aaron, you speak like a foolish woman.

    18:17-18:21

    Men, husbands, don't.

    18:25-18:28

Don't say that." Trust me on that.

    18:31-18:33

The doctor said the bones are setting nicely though.

    18:38-18:39

Let's go on to verse 10.

    18:43-18:48

He says, "Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?

    18:52-19:24

In all this, Job did not sin with his lips. Job passed the test again. Job was the same without health as he was without wealth, and now heaven is silent until we get to chapter 38. Here's the issue. Notice Satan kept bringing it up. What did Satan want Job to do? He wanted him to curse God. What's he talking about?

    19:26-19:50

He's talking about this, my friends, when we suffer, we have this tendency, we have this temptation when we suffer to immediately blame God. Now, please hear me. There is a God's sovereignty over everything.

    19:54-19:55

    And blaming God.

    19:56-19:58

    And cursing God.

    20:01-20:12

You see, this angry blaming, this resentful, bitter blaming, that's the heart of cursing God.

    20:14-20:19

It's not, "I know God is allowing this and God's using this." That's not what he's...

    20:19-20:20

    That's not the attitude.

    20:20-20:23

The attitude here is, "God, you did this!

    20:24-20:25

    You brought this on, God!

    20:25-20:30

You could have done something about this!" And it's just this angry backlash against God.

    20:32-20:40

And even when we do it, if we do it, we know deep down, we know that it's not right to blame God.

    20:41-20:42

    It's an emotional reaction.

    20:45-20:50

But right here we see very clearly Job did not go there.

    20:54-20:59

And I shared with you last week a little bit about the suffering that our family is enduring.

    21:00-21:10

So maybe you're like me, maybe you're getting through this passage of Job here and you're like, wow, how can I come through such horrible suffering and not be angry with God about that?

    21:11-21:15

Or on your outline, how can I not blame God for my suffering?

    21:16-21:21

Somehow Job managed to not curse God.

    21:22-21:23

    How can I get there?

    21:25-21:28

Well, it's all found in one verse.

    21:28-21:29

It's all found in verse 10.

    21:31-21:33

Here's three things to remind yourself when you suffer.

    21:34-21:44

You know, when you suffer and you're tempted angry with God, and you're gonna give God a piece of your mind, and you're gonna lash out at God, and you're gonna blame God.

    21:47-21:53

There's three things to remind yourself, so that you don't curse God with your lips.

    21:55-21:58

Number one, right, just foolish people blame God.

    22:04-22:09

Look, I don't know the sense in which Job made that horrible statement to his wife.

    22:11-22:20

Do you, where he says, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak." But Job, despite his suffering, immediately knew.

    22:23-22:40

He immediately knew that this idea of cursing or angrily blaming God, Job immediately knew in the middle of the suffering, he goes, "That's foolish to do that." Job was given so much from God.

    22:42-22:48

And he already acknowledged in chapter one, he's leaving the earth with exactly what he brought into the earth.

    22:51-23:01

So you see Job's attitude is, look, after everything that God's done for me, you mean to tell me I'm just gonna, at this point, face a little hardship and turn on him?

    23:02-23:03

After everything he's done for me?

    23:06-23:06

    Come on.

    23:08-23:09

    That's foolish.

    23:10-23:13

And every single one of you know that that's foolish.

    23:14-23:15

    You know that it is.

    23:16-23:18

You're like, I'm not sure that I know that.

    23:18-23:19

I'm sure that you know that.

    23:21-23:30

Parents, did you ever take your little ones to Kennywood or Waldemere or someplace like that?

    23:30-23:31

Parents, have you ever done that?

    23:31-23:34

Taking your like, you're like, we're gonna have a blast today.

    23:34-23:35

    Have you ever done that?

    23:36-23:46

We're gonna go to the Kennywood and we're gonna ride all the rides and we're gonna get the potato patch fries, right?

    23:46-24:03

And we're gonna get ice cream and then on the way out, we're gonna get you a balloon and then we're walking to the car and the kid lets go of the balloon and has a complete meltdown, right?

    24:04-24:07

This is the worst day of my life.

    24:11-24:12

    Excuse me?

    24:14-24:25

You mean to tell me we just had like 12 hours of the most fun a human can have and you lost your balloon and now your life is over?

    24:28-24:30

    Is that reasonable?

    24:32-24:33

    You're like, no, it's a child.

    24:34-24:36

    It's foolishness, right?

    24:40-24:44

But I just have to ask us, church, have we really grown out of that?

    24:47-24:48

Have we really grown out of that?

    24:52-24:57

Because, you know, maybe our Lord isn't going to take you to Kennywood as an adult.

    24:57-24:59

That would be fun, but maybe that's not how it's gonna go down.

    25:01-25:06

But you know, you've been blessed with family.

    25:08-25:09

You've been blessed with church family.

    25:10-25:13

Look around the room, you've been blessed with this church family.

    25:16-25:28

You've eaten, and you get to enjoy football, and you get to enjoy the sunshine, and you get to enjoy puppies.

    25:29-25:35

And then some hardship comes our way, and we're like, "God hates me!

    25:35-25:41

"My life is so miserable!" And we're just like that kid at Kennywood that just lost his balloon.

    25:46-25:53

Oh, and by the way, compared to Job, you have even less reason to blame God.

    25:55-25:57

Because you got to peek behind the curtain.

    25:58-26:00

Job had no idea this stuff was going on.

    26:01-26:09

But see, by this infinite blessing of the word of God, we do know what was going on.

    26:12-26:14

    And it's very clear here.

    26:15-26:18

Satan is held responsible for what happened to Job.

    26:19-26:20

    Okay, understand.

    26:20-26:48

It wasn't like God was up in heaven one day is bored, he goes, "Uh, you know, nothing on TV. I guess I'll smite someone that's trying to do the right thing." That's not how this played out. We see exactly how this plays out. Yes, God gave permission, but God was not complicit. And somebody would say, "Yeah, You know what, but God could have stopped it.

    26:50-26:52

    But God allowed it.

    26:52-26:57

So isn't it, honestly, isn't it kind of from God?

    26:58-27:00

If he could have stopped it, but he allowed it.

    27:00-27:06

Isn't that kind of from God when you think about it that way, you know, when you really think about it?

    27:08-27:10

Well, look at number two on your outline.

    27:12-27:13

How can I not blame God?

    27:13-27:14

    Here's something to remind yourself.

    27:14-27:16

Number two, everything comes from God.

    27:18-27:28

And if you wanna keep yourself from blaming God, if you wanna keep yourself from getting bent at the Almighty every time some hardship comes into your life, you gotta get where Job got.

    27:28-27:30

    And here's where Job got.

    27:31-27:32

    Everything comes from God.

    27:32-27:33

    Look at this statement.

    27:34-27:38

The reason Job didn't curse, it's all in this one statement here.

    27:38-27:48

He says, "Shall we receive good from God "and shall we not receive evil?" Like, how does that help?

    27:48-27:49

    How does that help anybody?

    27:53-27:59

Well, first of all, notice he said we, he was including her.

    28:00-28:04

Job wasn't speaking self-centeredly or magnanimously.

    28:04-28:07

Job was speaking for both of them.

    28:08-28:13

But in so doing, he gives a general principle for us all.

    28:16-28:19

everything good in your life you have received from God.

    28:22-28:31

So, can we not trust that same God to give us things that maybe look harmful?

    28:36-28:39

Believing that God knows what is best for us.

    28:42-28:45

This past Friday, I told you about my son a little bit last week.

    28:47-28:55

19 years old, suffers from some pretty severe health issues and as you know, mostly nonverbal.

    28:57-29:02

But this past Friday, we took him to Children's Hospital for a medical infusion.

    29:06-29:14

And I don't know how much he really understood about what was going on on Friday.

    29:17-29:25

But you know, I got to thinking, and I want to encourage you, imagine this scenario from his perspective, okay?

    29:26-29:30

'Cause I mean, it's natural, you might try to imagine this from my perspective, forget that.

    29:30-29:35

I want you to imagine the trip to Children's Hospital from my son's perspective.

    29:37-29:45

that dad makes you get dressed and get in the car, and dad drives you down to the city.

    29:49-29:53

And dad and mom, Aaron was there too.

    29:55-29:57

But I'm gonna take the heat for this.

    29:58-30:05

Dad made him sit in a chair, while a stranger came and shoved an enormous needle in his arm.

    30:07-30:09

What do you think he was thinking in that moment?

    30:12-30:13

Like, I thought dad loved me.

    30:14-30:15

    Why would dad do this?

    30:15-30:16

Why would dad bring me here?

    30:17-30:21

Why would dad allow this person to make me suffer like this?

    30:21-30:22

    Why would dad do that?

    30:24-30:26

I thought dad cared about me.

    30:27-30:29

So no, stick this giant needle in your arm.

    30:29-30:30

Now don't move for an hour.

    30:31-30:39

So okay, so not only is dad allowing this person to stab me, but dad's forbidding me to move from this place.

    30:40-30:43

And for him, an hour seems like about three weeks.

    30:48-30:54

Do you think there's a chance that that suffering that he experienced on Friday might've looked evil to him?

    30:55-30:56

    Do you think?

    31:01-31:05

Do you think maybe somehow in his own way, trying to process this.

    31:05-31:10

Do you think maybe the question crossed his mind, why would dad allow this to happen to me?

    31:14-31:23

But you know that dad was allowing that suffering because dad loves him.

    31:26-31:30

So my question to you is, is it possible?

    31:32-31:40

Is it possible that God has allowed suffering into my life to ultimately bless me?

    31:44-31:56

Is it possible that the suffering that I'm experiencing in my life right now is sort of the equivalent to dad sitting me in a chair and allowing a stranger to stick an IV into my arm?

    32:02-32:07

    You see, when I suffer, there's a lot that I don't know.

    32:09-32:11

When you suffer, there's a lot you don't know.

    32:11-32:13

How long do I have to endure this?

    32:14-32:16

What's God's, what is God's ultimate goal here?

    32:17-32:23

How is God ultimately going to use this in my life or in the lives of others or for this church?

    32:23-32:38

That there is, despite all the questions that I have, there is one thing that I know with absolute certainty in the face of any suffering that I endure, and it is God's character.

    32:39-32:40

    I know that.

    32:43-32:46

He loves me with an eternal love.

    32:46-32:51

He loves me with a love that's greater than the love that I have for my own son.

    32:54-33:09

And once again, we get this peek behind the curtain In Job chapter two, and once again, it's like God wants us to know there is nothing that is coming into your life that doesn't go through his hands first.

    33:11-33:19

Anything Satan wants to do to you has to go across his desk, has to go across God's desk before it comes into your life.

    33:24-33:42

Remember the end of chapter one, Job says, "God does nothing empty." So if I'm suffering, God is not only allowing it, but he's using it, even if I don't see how.

    33:43-33:44

    He's using it.

    33:47-33:53

And if I get that, if I get to the place, everything comes from God.

    33:54-34:03

Even this thing that looks horrible had to have come from him, then I'm not gonna curse him.

    34:06-34:14

And finally, number three, how do I not blame God for my suffering?

    34:14-34:18

Remind yourself this, not blaming God is a matter of choice.

    34:19-34:20

    It's a matter of choice.

    34:20-34:23

Look at verse 10 again, last phrase.

    34:24-34:33

It says in all this, "Job did not sin with his lips." Job did not sin with his lips.

    34:34-34:37

You're like, okay, well, what about his heart?

    34:40-34:41

    I don't know.

    34:43-34:52

I do know for sure that Job struggled to make sense of all of this.

    34:53-35:05

I do know that because you read the rest of the book, you're gonna see him trying to process, making sense of this horrible suffering.

    35:07-35:16

But, Job sinning with his lips is what Satan predicted.

    35:17-35:23

And Job sinning with his lips is not what Job did.

    35:23-35:48

And so, Satan was wrong again. Look, I don't want any of this to come across like some cold, detached, clinical, academic evaluation of suffering. No, look, we already talked about this a little bit last week.

    35:48-35:50

    Feelings are feelings, right?

    35:51-35:52

    Job wasn't a robot.

    35:57-36:00

You can't help how you feel, okay?

    36:00-36:01

    Feelings aren't wrong.

    36:02-36:06

I have people all the time when I'm counseling, they say, "Oh, you know what, Pastor Jeff?

    36:06-36:11

"I know it's wrong, but I feel that." No, no, no, feelings are never wrong.

    36:12-36:13

    Feelings are a reaction.

    36:13-36:17

What I wanna get to is what are you thinking that's making you feel that way?

    36:17-36:18

    because maybe your thinking's off.

    36:19-36:21

    But feelings aren't inherently wrong.

    36:22-36:23

    You feel what you feel.

    36:25-36:30

And no one is expecting you to love suffering, okay?

    36:37-36:43

Look, you can't choose how you feel.

    36:47-36:51

but you can choose what you're gonna do with your mouth.

    36:55-36:57

    You have that choice.

    36:58-37:06

And with this mouth, you can curse God, or you can worship God.

    37:08-37:13

I gotta tell you, the first couple of chapters of Job, they're scary.

    37:15-37:21

And when I say they're scary, I don't mean like, like a horror movie, right?

    37:22-37:23

Do you like the scary movies?

    37:24-37:30

I remember as a kid seeing "Jaws." Did you ever see "Jaws?" Saw it as an adult.

    37:32-37:40

Didn't have the same impact it had on me when I was, when I was a kid, it terrified me.

    37:43-37:45

    But Job is scary.

    37:45-37:50

But see, it's different because in Jaws, I just stay out of the ocean.

    37:53-37:58

So I can watch the movie and I can have those feelings, but not for me.

    37:58-38:00

That's like getting eaten by a shark.

    38:00-38:00

    That's your problem.

    38:03-38:05

You know, no sharks in Zillionopel.

    38:09-38:10

But you know what makes Job so scary?

    38:13-38:15

is because this could be your story.

    38:21-38:26

Job's story can become your story too.

    38:27-38:29

That's what makes this so terrifying.

    38:31-38:38

You're like, "Wait, how do we know Job "ain't a one and done?" Well, I do know Revelation 12 looked that up sometime.

    38:39-38:42

Satan is called the accuser of the brothers.

    38:46-38:48

    How about this one?

    38:49-39:00

Did you know, did you know that Satan went to God about Peter the same way that Satan went to God about Job?

    39:01-39:02

    Do we have those verses?

    39:02-39:03

    What is it, Luke 22?

    39:04-39:05

    Yeah, there it is.

    39:06-39:08

This is what Jesus said to Peter.

    39:10-39:17

He said, "Simon, Simon, behold, "Satan demanded to have you." Sound familiar?

    39:19-39:20

    It's the same stuff.

    39:22-39:23

Oh yeah, what do you mean?

    39:25-39:28

Jesus says that he might sift you like wheat.

    39:30-39:31

    What's that mean?

    39:31-39:33

Means I'm gonna put him through the ringer and see if he's legit.

    39:35-39:36

    Sound familiar?

    39:38-39:41

Satan demanded to have you, he might sift you like wheat.

    39:42-39:49

Look at this, "But I have prayed for you "that your faith may not fail.

    39:51-40:02

"And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers." Notice there, Jesus didn't pray that it wouldn't happen.

    40:02-40:03

    Did you notice that?

    40:07-40:09

    He prayed for Peter's faith.

    40:11-40:19

And Jesus told Peter on the other side of his suffering, he'll be equipped to minister to others.

    40:21-40:24

And they're like, yeah, good for Peter.

    40:25-40:32

I mean, could you imagine the rush that you would get if the Lord Jesus Christ himself came and said, hey, I've been praying for you.

    40:33-40:39

Like good for Peter, he had God incarnate praying for him.

    40:41-40:43

Well, let's look at another verse, Hebrews chapter seven.

    40:44-41:03

Look at this, talking about Jesus, it says, "Consequently, he is able to save to the other most those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them." Do you know that Jesus is praying for you?

    41:06-41:13

And I don't mean Jesus is praying for you in the lie that we tell at church, like I've been praying for you when we haven't been, or I will pray for you when we won't.

    41:13-41:17

Jesus is actually right now praying for you.

    41:19-41:28

And if his statement to Peter is any indication, Jesus isn't praying for you the way most of us pray for others.

    41:31-41:36

You know, we often would say, "God, God, heal him." That's what we would do.

    41:36-41:40

"Heal him, God, God, please heal him." And there's nothing wrong with praying that.

    41:42-41:44

    God, ease her suffering.

    41:44-41:46

Please, God, take her suffering away.

    41:48-41:50

There's nothing really wrong with praying that either.

    41:56-41:59

I want you to notice that Jesus is praying.

    42:00-42:11

that through your suffering you have a stronger faith that you're going to use to lift others up.

    42:15-42:45

So whether it looks good or bad, whether you see God's purpose for your suffering right now, or you have no idea what he's doing. You've got to land on the truth that kept Job from cursing God. And that is the acknowledgement and the belief and the firm conviction that everything comes from God.

    42:48-42:49

    So we're gonna worship Him.

    42:50-42:51

    Let's pray.

    42:53-43:08

Our Father in heaven, it is a terrifying thought for us to think that someone like Satan would wanna destroy us just because he likes to destroy.

    43:08-43:16

In fact, we even see in your Word, Father, You said to Satan that he tried to incite you against Job to destroy him without reason.

    43:17-43:19

    It's a horrifying thought.

    43:24-43:46

But what an eternally comforting thought to know that there's not a thing that Satan could do to any of us, that you don't have to okay first, and that you're going to use whatever suffering Satan wants to bring, you're going to turn it back on his head and you're going to use it to bless us and bless others.

    43:49-43:53

Father, I just pray today, 'cause I know there are so many people suffering here.

    43:54-43:55

    Some have suffered loss.

    43:57-43:59

Some are suffering with health issues.

    43:59-44:01

Some are suffering with relationship issues.

    44:02-44:03

    We all got something.

    44:05-44:15

But I just pray today, Father, that you would energize and refresh and encourage our hearts with the truth that everything comes from you.

    44:19-44:20

    So we will worship.

    44:23-44:26

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Job 2:1-10

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Why did Satan say that physical suffering will turn a man against God, when losing wealth wouldn’t (Job 2:4-5)? Do you think there’s truth in that? Why or why not?

  3. Note the last sentence in Job 2:3. What did God mean that Satan “incited God against Job to destroy Job without reason”? What does this say about Satan’s motives?

  4. Job’s reason for not cursing God is given in the question Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil? (Job 2:10) How is this a reasonable explanation to not curse God in your suffering? What does it mean that God “gives evil”?

Open up your Bibles to the book of Job.

    01:16-01:20

The first service was packed, and I think it was because of that whole extra hour, right?

    01:22-01:24

I had an idea for that, now hear me out.

    01:25-01:27

You know, daylight savings, you get an extra hour, right?

    01:28-01:35

I always thought they should give you some sort of a coupon or something that you can use that hour whenever you want, right?

    01:35-01:39

Like if you're late for work, you're like, I'm gonna cash in my hour today, please.

    01:40-01:41

    I mean, isn't that a great idea?

    01:42-01:43

    Who's with me on that?

    01:44-01:50

Okay, I'd like to cash in my extra hour right now for this sermon.

    01:52-01:55

    You're like, I don't think that's such a good idea anymore.

    01:57-01:59

    Let's bow our heads.

    01:59-02:02

I'm gonna ask that you would please pray for me and I will pray for you.

    02:04-02:13

Pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's word And I will pray for you to receive it for what it is the word of God.

    02:14-02:14

    Let's pray.

    02:16-02:20

Father, we believe that faith comes by hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.

    02:22-02:32

So I pray, Father, that you would increase our faith today, strengthen our faith on what is a very sensitive subject.

    02:35-02:38

Open our hearts and minds for what you have to say.

    02:38-02:40

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    02:41-02:44

And all of God's people said, amen.

    02:46-02:47

    Job chapter one.

    02:50-02:58

Many of you know, I have a very sick son.

    03:00-03:06

And I'm not sure how many of you realize the extent of his disorder.

    03:08-03:11

At a very young age, he was diagnosed with autism.

    03:13-03:26

And we've been to some of the best autism doctors in the world, and one of the world's greatest doctors in this field said that my son's case was one of the worst he's ever seen.

    03:27-03:29

Not what you wanna hear from the doctor, right?

    03:30-03:32

    But he's mostly nonverbal.

    03:33-03:35

But he has some other conditions too.

    03:36-03:40

We found out, for example, that he's always producing adrenaline.

    03:41-03:47

Something in his body is constantly producing adrenaline and he doesn't produce melatonin.

    03:48-03:52

And when you put that together, what you have is somebody who never gets tired.

    03:53-04:02

But the other problem with that is he is, with the constantly producing adrenaline, he is so often in his life in fight or flight mode.

    04:03-04:19

And if you've ever been so scared that you could run through a wall, or so angry that you're tempted to punch somebody in the mouth, he lives in that on top of his other issues.

    04:20-04:27

He also has a condition we found out several years ago called pandas.

    04:27-04:36

That's the pediatric version, and there's a different name for it when you're an adult, I can't remember what it is, but it's a strep A blood infection.

    04:38-04:50

And his mixture of problems results in violent outbursts that are always so unpredictable.

    04:51-04:55

We can go a couple of weeks where he's happy.

    04:58-05:02

We can go a month where he's raging nonstop.

    05:03-05:19

And when the levy breaks and he rages, it results in him, he's put holes in walls, he's attacked a dog.

    05:23-05:27

One of his favorite things to do is to just smash glass.

    05:27-05:32

So he'll get a candle or a drinking glass or anything that he can shatter on the floor.

    05:33-05:39

And maybe the worst is there've been many times where he's attacked his mother.

    05:41-05:43

And he's bigger than me now.

    05:48-05:56

And there have been so many times that I've been here at work and I'll get a phone call.

    05:58-05:59

    (congregation laughing)

    06:02-06:08

And I've had to race home because he's attacking his mother.

    06:11-06:15

I know if my other son calls me, I know that that's always a bad thing.

    06:16-06:24

He usually texts me, but if my younger son calls me, I'm like, we're having problems.

    06:29-06:34

One time when I got the call, it sounded like a war zone in the background.

    06:34-06:36

There was just so much screaming and smashing.

    06:39-06:43

I jumped in the car and was racing home again.

    06:44-06:50

And as I often do in these situations, as you would, I pray while I'm heading home.

    06:52-06:54

Usually text Pastor Taylor and ask him to pray.

    06:55-07:03

But one time in particular, and I'm not proud of this, but I'm just being honest with you, I was angry praying.

    07:05-07:06

    I remember what I said.

    07:10-07:51

I was screaming while I was driving, I'm 19 here, I was screaming, "God, I know that you see what's happening, "but what I don't understand is how you can watch and not do anything about it. I don't understand that. I was angry, crying out, "God, why? Why don't you stop this? Why would you allow this kid to suffer that results in suffering for the whole family? Why would you allow this, God?

    07:52-07:58

Why don't you do anything about it? Why?

    08:02-08:18

That's always the question, isn't it? When you're suffering, it's why. And in this In series through Job, we want to make sense of suffering.

    08:22-08:24

    We all face suffering.

    08:24-08:29

Like, I'm not telling you my story as if I got the market cornered on suffering.

    08:29-08:31

We all got our share, right?

    08:31-08:34

For some of you, maybe it's a relationship issue.

    08:35-08:38

You're suffering because of a problem with someone else.

    08:38-08:43

For some of you, Maybe it's a financial hardship.

    08:46-08:49

For some of you, maybe it's problems in your business.

    08:52-08:59

A business that you've poured yourself into and now there's problems.

    08:59-09:01

There's, you know, am I gonna have to close the doors?

    09:01-09:02

    Am I gonna be bankrupt?

    09:04-09:10

And I know for a lot of you, it'd be personal loss.

    09:12-09:15

Saying goodbye to somebody when you weren't ready to say goodbye.

    09:18-09:23

But in all this, whatever your suffering is, wouldn't you like to know why?

    09:25-09:29

Wouldn't you like to know why God would allow that to happen to you?

    09:32-09:34

Well, let's look at God's word together, shall we?

    09:36-09:38

    Let's look at chapter one.

    09:38-09:39

    Let's start in verse one.

    09:41-09:42

It's a good place to start.

    09:43-09:48

It says, "Now there was a man in the land of Uz "whose name was Job.

    09:51-09:57

"And that man was blameless and upright, "one who feared God and turned away from evil.

    09:59-10:02

"They were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

    10:04-10:21

"He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, "500 yoke of oxen and 500 female donkeys "and very many servants, "so that this man was the greatest "of all the people of the East." That's a little bit about the man, Job.

    10:21-10:24

    He was a good guy.

    10:24-10:29

He was honest, he was upright, and he was loaded.

    10:30-10:32

    He had so much wealth.

    10:36-10:36

    They had a big family.

    10:37-10:47

Look at verse four, speaking of, "His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one on his day." Sounds like he's talking about like a birthday party.

    10:47-10:51

They'd get together on each other's birthdays and have a big party, is what it sounds like.

    10:51-11:03

"And they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them." Okay, so Job not only had a big family, he had what looks like a very functional family.

    11:03-11:10

All the kids got along and they enjoyed being together Great. He goes on.

    11:11-11:20

"And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings.

    11:20-11:31

According to the number of them all," that tells us Job probably lived in the patriarchal area, like in Abraham's day, because this was pre-Mosaic law, right?

    11:33-11:34

Kind of dates it a little bit for us.

    11:36-11:49

It says, "For Job said, 'It may be "that my children have sinned "and cursed God in their hearts.' "Thus Job did continually." So we learned quite a bit about this man.

    11:49-11:56

He was a wealthy man, he was a family man, but he was also a godly man, right?

    11:56-11:58

    He was a worshiper.

    12:01-12:02

Let's jump down to verse 13.

    12:05-12:13

It says, "Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking in their oldest brother's house." Okay, birthday party.

    12:13-12:20

"And there came a messenger to Job and said, 'The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them.

    12:20-12:25

And the Sabeans fell upon them and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword.

    12:26-12:32

And I alone have escaped to tell you.'" Like this is horrible news.

    12:35-12:36

    He was robbed.

    12:37-12:44

And if you've ever been robbed, somebody's ever stolen something from you, you know how violated that makes you feel.

    12:44-12:44

    It's happened to me.

    12:44-12:52

You just feel so just angry and like, can't believe somebody would, horrible.

    12:55-13:02

Verse 16, it says, "While he was just speaking, "there came another and said, "the fire of God fell from heaven." probably lightning, right?

    13:03-13:07

And burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them.

    13:07-13:09

And I alone have escaped to tell you.

    13:09-13:10

    Like what?

    13:10-13:10

    What?

    13:13-13:24

You mean to say I was not only robbed, but you're telling me that some natural disaster wiped out many of my servants and some more of my wealth?

    13:24-13:24

    What?

    13:28-13:40

New verse 17 says, "While he was yet speaking, And there came another and said, the Chaldeans formed three groups and made a raid on the camels and took them and struck down the servants with the edge of the sword.

    13:41-13:43

And I alone have escaped to tell you.

    13:44-13:46

That was a little more than just a robbery, wasn't it?

    13:46-13:49

That was like a calculated attack.

    13:49-13:51

    They formed groups.

    13:51-13:54

That was a deliberate hostile attack.

    14:00-14:04

And if you're like Job, you would think, man, can this day get any worse?

    14:07-14:22

It says, "While he was yet speaking, there came another and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine "in their oldest brother's house." I imagine at this point, Job was like, yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, I know, I know, yeah.

    14:22-14:23

What about them, what about them?

    14:27-14:36

"Behold, a great wind came across the wilderness "and struck the four corners of the house, "and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead.

    14:37-14:46

"And I alone have escaped to tell you." That's the worst thing a parent can hear.

    14:49-14:51

    There's been a terrible accident.

    14:54-14:56

    Your kids didn't make it.

    14:57-14:58

    I'm so sorry.

    15:00-15:01

    Why?

    15:02-15:06

I mean, we saw in the first few verses what kind of a guy he was.

    15:08-15:17

So why would a godly man who was so dedicated to his family and so dedicated to the Lord suffer the way that he did?

    15:22-15:22

    Why?

    15:24-15:25

Why is always the question, isn't it?

    15:28-15:30

Why are there tragic car accidents?

    15:33-15:34

    Why are there hurricanes?

    15:34-15:37

    Why do children get sick?

    15:41-15:46

And then my son goes to the Watson Institute when we can get him there.

    15:48-16:04

And it is absolutely heartbreaking to sit in a parking lot and watch these parents pull up in their vans and kids being wheeled in, AIDS coming out, some kids have walkers, some in wheelchairs or wagons.

    16:09-16:12

And it's hard to just sit and watch that.

    16:13-16:15

So often I just think, why?

    16:18-16:19

Why would God allow that to happen?

    16:22-16:24

Why is always the question, right?

    16:24-16:27

Why did my faithful friend's church plant fail?

    16:29-16:33

Why was my close friend Mike killed in a motorcycle accident years ago?

    16:36-16:39

Why does my son have to suffer with this horrible condition?

    16:40-16:44

I'm a piece of garbage, I deserve to suffer, but not him.

    16:44-16:46

    He doesn't deserve this.

    16:47-16:47

    Why?

    16:51-16:57

Why did Job have the worst day that a person can have?

    16:58-17:00

And go ahead and challenge me on that.

    17:00-17:02

Have you had a worse day than this?

    17:04-17:04

    Why?

    17:08-17:18

Do you realize in one day, in one day Job dealt with like the whole spectrum of like bad things that can happen to a person, right?

    17:19-17:26

He dealt with a malicious attack, sin, robbery.

    17:27-17:31

We could just label that under sins at the hands of others.

    17:33-17:36

He dealt with that twice, by the way, same day.

    17:36-17:54

He dealt with two natural disasters, lightning, hurricane that wiped out not just his stuff, but in one day, not only losing his servants and all of his wealth, he lost all 10 of his kids one day.

    17:57-17:58

    Why?

    18:01-18:10

Well, you know, in Job's case, we actually get the why.

    18:13-18:24

And we, listen, church, we really need to sit up and pay really close attention for all of the times that I've had to ask myself why, and you've asked yourself, why am I going through this?

    18:25-18:31

We actually get insight to why Job suffered the loss of his wealth and servants and children.

    18:33-18:34

And maybe there's something here for us too.

    18:38-18:43

We actually get a peek behind the curtain of heaven.

    18:45-18:48

I skipped a section, did you notice that?

    18:49-18:50

I wanna go back and look at that.

    18:53-19:03

I wanna look at these events, that this peek behind the curtain of what was going on in heaven sometime before Job had this horrible day of tragedy.

    19:06-19:07

    Go to verse six.

    19:08-19:16

It says, "Now there was a day "when the sons of God "came to present themselves before the Lord.

    19:17-19:23

"And Satan also came among them." Like, what's he talking about here?

    19:24-19:27

Well, sons of God, did you know there is a divine council?

    19:29-19:33

Beings that are supernatural, but beneath God.

    19:35-19:37

It's all through the Old Testament, by the way, and in the New Testament.

    19:39-19:42

    Psalm 82, Psalm 89, 1 Kings 22.

    19:43-19:45

I don't have time to unpack all of that today.

    19:46-19:49

But if you're interested, buy me Chick-fil-A and we can sit down and talk about it.

    19:51-19:57

But it says that the sons of God, this divine counsel, they came to present themselves.

    19:58-20:01

Now that's kind of a technical term in the Hebrew.

    20:02-20:06

It's when you show up before a superior to get your assignment.

    20:07-20:10

Like, hey, I'm showing up, tell me what you would like me to do and I'll do it.

    20:10-20:11

    That's what's going on here.

    20:13-20:15

And it says that Satan came among them.

    20:16-20:17

Now, something we lose in the English.

    20:18-20:22

In the Hebrew, there's a definite article attached to this.

    20:23-20:25

    It is the Satan came.

    20:26-20:28

Satan's not a name, by the way, it's a title.

    20:29-20:30

    It means adversary.

    20:30-20:32

    It means an opponent.

    20:33-20:36

So the adversary came among them.

    20:38-20:47

Look at the next verse, verse seven says, "And the Lord said to Satan, 'From where have you come?'" Do you know when God asks a question, he's not looking for information.

    20:47-20:48

    You know that, right?

    20:50-20:51

    He's looking for a confession.

    20:53-21:07

So he goes, "From wherever you come, "Satan answered the Lord and said, "from going to and fro in the earth "and from walking up and down on it." So God's like, "Report, what have you been doing?" And Satan sounds like a teenager.

    21:09-21:11

God's like, "What have you been doing?" And Satan's like, "Stuff."

    21:11-21:13

    (congregation laughing)

    21:14-21:15

    Where have you been?

    21:15-21:16

Oh, you know, here and there.

    21:20-21:44

Verse eight, "The Lord said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, "that there is none like him on the earth, "a blameless and upright man "who fears God and turns away from evil?" Now, you know, this verse here, apparently one of Satan's jobs is to search man and woman who legitimately loves God.

    21:46-22:01

Because God, do you notice, he initiates this part of the conversation, but God here highlights somebody that he sounds actually proud of, doesn't he?

    22:06-22:12

He says, "If you consider Job," and then the Lord repeats the same description of Job that was written in verse one.

    22:15-22:20

Okay, back in verse nine it says, then Satan answered the Lord and said, "Does Job fear God for no reason?

    22:24-22:29

Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has on every side?

    22:29-22:39

You have blessed the work of his hands and his possessions have increased in the land." So Satan agrees with the assessment.

    22:42-22:52

But he asks the big question, "Why?" Oh, we've been talking about why.

    22:52-22:53

    Satan has a why, though.

    22:54-22:59

His is this, "Why does Job worship you?

    23:01-23:11

Does Job worship you because you are worthy of worship or does Job worship you because Job benefits from you?

    23:14-23:25

I mean, come on, let's face it, you gave Job a wife and they must get along pretty good because they got 10 kids.

    23:26-23:29

So you've given Job this big, amazing family.

    23:30-23:33

Oh, by the way, you also gave Job so much wealth.

    23:34-23:36

    Oh, and protection?

    23:36-23:40

You're like a personal security guard for Job.

    23:40-23:41

You put a hedge around him.

    23:44-23:46

Satan's like, well, who wouldn't sign up for that?

    23:48-23:55

If there's a God who's gonna just give all of this stuff like that, like who wouldn't wanna follow a God like that?

    23:57-23:58

    Look at verse 11.

    24:02-24:27

He says, "But stretch out your hand "and touch all that he has, "and he will curse you to your face." Satan says the only way to know that Job is legit, take his stuff away and see if he still worships you.

    24:29-24:29

    (laughs)

    24:31-24:32

    That's evil.

    24:35-24:37

    That is evil.

    24:40-24:41

    But he's right.

    24:45-24:52

He's right in that that's a way to find out what somebody's really made of, isn't it?

    24:54-25:07

I mean, Satan's probably seen it countless times before, where people were like, when things are good, praise God.

    25:08-25:11

Then hard times come, God hates me.

    25:13-25:17

Satan has probably seen this so many times.

    25:19-25:24

I'm sure of that because as a pastor, I've only been a pastor for like two and a half decades.

    25:25-25:39

I've seen it so many times, just in that short amount of time, so many times, that when somebody comes to the church for help and you help them, you're the greatest thing since Chuck Spurgeon.

    25:41-25:50

But the minute you can't deliver for them the way they want you to, you're trash.

    25:52-25:55

There was this one guy, he had just gotten out of jail and he had nothing.

    25:56-25:59

I can't remember what holiday it was, but it was on a holiday.

    26:00-26:08

But my wife and I, we put him up at this hotel, it was this place in Route 8, and we went to the store and we got him groceries and got him all set up.

    26:08-26:31

And he's just like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, "you're the greatest pastor in the world." And I'm like, "My dog thinks so." And he's like, "You are just awesome." And then like almost immediately he goes, "I need you to get diapers and wipes "'cause I gotta deliver my kid." And I'm like, "I can't, I just can't do that right now." And I'll never, he just completely lashed out at me.

    26:32-26:42

He goes, "You know, I thought you knew the Lord." And I'm like, "So, let me get this straight.

    26:42-26:46

"I'm only great if I can do something for you.

    26:48-26:55

"But if I don't, I'm no good." You see, that's exactly what Satan was saying about Job.

    26:55-27:02

Oh, he's only gonna worship you as long as you keep bringing him his stuff.

    27:06-27:06

    But you take that away.

    27:09-27:10

    He's not gonna worship you.

    27:10-27:18

In fact, Job will do to you, God, the very thing that he feared his kids would do, and that's curse you.

    27:22-27:27

All right, verse 12, it says, "And the Lord said to Satan, 'Behold, all that he has is in your hand.

    27:28-27:41

Only against him do not stretch out your hand.' So Satan went out in the presence of the Lord." I got to tell you, this is an astonishing verse to me.

    27:43-27:50

It's a hard pill to swallow, that Satan would come and make such an accusation and God goes with it.

    27:56-28:12

That the Lord would actually say, "Okay, he's all yours, but don't touch him." the verses six through 12 here, we get a peek behind the curtain.

    28:13-28:25

We get a little glimpse of heaven and what happened before actually, what prompted Job's suffering.

    28:28-28:31

So the question is, what do we see behind the curtain?

    28:31-28:32

    We got our peek.

    28:33-28:33

    What do we see?

    28:34-28:35

Oh, we see a lot of things.

    28:38-28:46

I just wanted to share with you three things that really caught my attention at this peak behind the curtain.

    28:46-28:47

Write these down on your outline.

    28:48-28:50

Here's the first thing we see.

    28:51-28:54

Number one, heaven takes note of your conduct.

    28:58-29:01

You're like, hang on, Pastor Jeff.

    29:01-29:06

Don't you mean God takes note of your conduct?

    29:09-29:22

Well, sure, I mean, God commended Job's conduct, but did you notice Satan immediately recognized who God was talking about?

    29:26-29:27

    Here's what I mean.

    29:28-29:37

When God says, "If you considered my servant Job," Satan wasn't like, "Hang on, "I'm gonna have to Facebook stalk him." How do you spell that?

    29:39-29:41

Well, like job, only we say Job.

    29:41-29:42

    I'm gonna...

    29:44-29:45

Do you have a last name?

    29:45-29:46

    From us, right?

    29:48-29:49

Satan didn't have to do that.

    29:50-29:51

    Do you notice that?

    29:52-29:57

As soon as God said, "Have you considered Job?" Satan, he knew right away.

    29:57-30:09

"Oh, yeah, yeah, I know that guy, "the guy that you hedged, the guy that you blessed." Do you know what that tells me?

    30:12-30:17

That being godly doesn't make you exempt from suffering.

    30:19-30:27

And according to this peak, maybe we say being godly makes you a target for suffering.

    30:32-30:41

Do you ever know somebody that just seems like, just every angle of life just seems to be battering them?

    30:42-30:51

And I've said this about people, and I'm sure you have too, that you just look at certain people and you're like, man, he is such a good guy.

    30:53-30:58

Like, I don't understand why he's always struggling.

    30:59-31:00

    He's such a good guy.

    31:05-31:08

Well, maybe he's struggling because he's a good guy.

    31:12-31:17

And again, as a pastor, we hear things like this often.

    31:19-31:22

You know, as soon as I got baptized, my life got really hard.

    31:23-31:24

    (congregation laughing)

    31:27-31:33

Or as soon as I joined the church, boy, it just seems like the wheels came off of everything in my life.

    31:37-31:39

And I've heard this one a lot.

    31:41-31:49

That there's somebody that needs to repent from a certain sin, and you counsel them and walk them through that, and they make the decision they are going to turn from this sin.

    31:49-31:55

I've had people come back and tell me, You know, as soon as I repented from that sin, my life got so hard.

    31:59-32:01

    You think that's a coincidence?

    32:07-32:13

Maybe God took note of your conduct and Satan is challenging your sincerity.

    32:15-32:21

Oh, speaking of sincerity, number two, What do we see behind the curtain?

    32:21-32:23

We see that your motive is what really matters.

    32:26-32:27

Your motive is what really matters.

    32:28-32:29

This is what Satan called into question.

    32:30-32:42

Notice Satan didn't say, "How does Job worship you?" He said, "In essence, why?

    32:45-32:53

Why does Job worship you, really?" Satan didn't call his conduct into question, he called his motives into question.

    32:53-32:54

And do you know what that tells me?

    32:55-32:59

That tells me that you can do all the right stuff for all the wrong reasons.

    33:02-33:17

I mean, you can look the part, you can go to church, you can serve, you can look like you have your family together, your home's in order, you can be a nice neighbor.

    33:20-33:25

but do you really do what you do because you love the Lord?

    33:29-33:30

    Your motive is what matters.

    33:34-33:38

Number three, I'm sure you noticed this.

    33:40-33:41

What do we see behind the curtain?

    33:42-33:44

Number three, Satan does nothing without God say so.

    33:50-33:52

Satan does nothing without God's say so.

    33:53-33:55

People give Satan way too much credit.

    33:56-33:57

    Is he powerful?

    33:58-33:59

    Yes.

    34:00-34:00

    Evil?

    34:02-34:02

    Yes.

    34:03-34:04

    Sovereign?

    34:06-34:06

    No.

    34:10-34:13

Look, Satan isn't running around willy nilly.

    34:16-34:22

Like God's sitting on the throne in heaven going, I wonder what Satan's up to?

    34:24-34:28

God's like, I wonder who Satan's going after today.

    34:29-34:30

    That's not happening.

    34:34-34:38

Satan does nothing without God signing off on it first.

    34:39-34:44

Do you notice here, God even gives Satan clear, specific parameters.

    34:48-34:49

You know what that tells me?

    34:51-35:00

That tells me that there is nothing that you and I are going to face that God doesn't sovereignly allow into our lives, and that includes suffering.

    35:05-35:12

So this scene in heaven, This wasn't just a wager between a couple of college buddies.

    35:16-35:18

    This is important.

    35:21-35:36

For the entire heavenly host to see, for everyone on earth to see, God is worthy of worship and his worth is not dependent upon his gifts.

    35:40-36:04

So here's the real question. How will Job respond? It will reveal Job's heart, as Satan indicated it would, but is Job going to curse God as Satan predicted that he would?

    36:07-36:09

Well, let's find out, jump down to verse 20.

    36:10-36:14

This is after the four waves of incredible tragedy.

    36:14-36:27

It says, "Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped.

    36:29-36:39

And he said, 'Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return.' the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away.

    36:41-36:42

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

    36:45-36:50

And all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.

    36:55-37:05

After all the loss, his money, his servants, his 10 kids, Job worshiped.

    37:06-37:09

    Now, of course, he mourned.

    37:09-37:10

    The Bible tells us that.

    37:10-37:15

When it says he tore his robe and he shaved his head, those are signs of anguish.

    37:15-37:16

    Those are signs of mourning.

    37:16-37:18

    He wasn't a robot, okay?

    37:18-37:19

    He mourned.

    37:21-37:23

But Job was not angry with God.

    37:25-37:27

And Job did not curse God.

    37:31-37:33

Your Bible tells you that Job worshiped God.

    37:35-37:37

    Satan was wrong.

    37:41-38:03

And I think my church friends, I think that we read this account of Job and there's something deep down in us that immediately wants to think, "Man, I would love to respond to suffering the way Job responded to suffering, right?

    38:03-38:05

I mean, isn't that what you want?

    38:05-38:18

Don't you wanna kind of put yourself in a story like, man, if that was me suffering, I'd wanna respond in worship.

    38:21-38:26

And my response is, you will.

    38:30-38:35

And your response to that might be, how can you be so sure that I will?

    38:40-38:42

Well, write this down on your outline.

    38:42-38:43

You will worship while you suffer.

    38:44-38:46

    I am convinced of that.

    38:47-38:52

If you meet certain conditions, I guarantee you that you will, the same conditions that Job met.

    38:53-38:58

You will worship while you suffer, letter A, if you're a worshiper before you suffer.

    39:03-39:09

You see, this horrible day didn't give Job character.

    39:11-39:12

    It revealed his character.

    39:17-39:26

By the way, Job did not know about this whole scene in heaven, this whole exchange between God and Satan.

    39:28-39:30

Job didn't know that he was being tested.

    39:30-39:32

    He was fighting blindfolded.

    39:35-39:36

    And it didn't matter.

    39:39-39:41

Because that's just who Job was.

    39:41-39:42

    He was a worshiper.

    39:43-39:54

And listen, my friends, if you aren't sincerely worshipping the Lord from your heart now, You're not going to be magically inclined to worship the Lord when suffering comes.

    40:01-40:03

    We all suffer with things.

    40:04-40:05

    I shared mine.

    40:05-40:09

We could bring every one of you up here to share a story.

    40:12-40:15

We're all suffering with something, but listen, suffering doesn't make or break you.

    40:16-40:17

    It exposes you.

    40:20-40:23

So you will worship while you suffer if you're a worshiper before you suffer.

    40:23-40:29

Letter B, you will worship while you suffer if you remember that you're leaving earth with what you brought.

    40:35-40:42

Verse 21, we see that Job already knew the truth that Solomon stated long after Job.

    40:44-40:48

I think it's in Ecclesiastes 5, but it goes something like this.

    40:48-40:54

You're leaving the earth with what you brought, which is what?

    40:56-40:57

    Nothing.

    40:59-41:19

And that's why Job was able to say, because of this reality and everything he's been blessed with on the earth, he says, "The Lord gave, "and the Lord has taken away." Did you know that every single thing on the earth belongs to God?

    41:19-41:20

    Did you know that?

    41:21-41:22

    You better know that.

    41:23-41:25

We just spent four weeks talking about that.

    41:26-41:28

Don't you pretend now like this is news.

    41:30-41:31

    Everything belongs to God.

    41:35-41:52

And everything he gives me is a gift that I'm going to enjoy for a season on the earth because God might take it away from me or he might take me away from the earth.

    41:56-41:58

But I love God, not his gifts.

    42:01-42:10

And finally, letter C, if you believe that God has a purpose for literally everything.

    42:11-42:17

You will worship while you suffer if you believe that God has a purpose for literally everything.

    42:18-42:20

Look at this last verse again, verse 22.

    42:20-42:43

It says, "And all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong." Literally, this can be translated, "And all this Job did not charge God with doing that which is empty." Despite everything that was happening, Job says, I know that there's meaning to this.

    42:43-42:47

This isn't a meaningless event that's going on.

    42:51-42:55

Do you truly believe that God is sovereign?

    42:56-42:58

I mean, do you really believe that?

    42:59-43:02

Not just sitting in Harvard's Bible Chapel on Sunday morning.

    43:03-43:06

I mean, do you believe that God is sovereign?

    43:10-43:33

Because I gotta confess to you in some of my weaker moments, when I'm patching a hole in a wall, or I'm cleaning up glass for the umpteenth time, there have been so many times that I have said, this is so senseless.

    43:38-43:40

And I've had to repent from that.

    43:42-43:49

Because that statement directly contradicts what God's word says.

    43:53-43:54

    Nothing is senseless.

    43:58-43:59

    Nothing is senseless.

    44:02-44:02

    Even suffering.

    44:04-44:05

    Wait, wait.

    44:08-44:09

I want a do over on that last statement.

    44:10-44:10

Can I get a do over?

    44:11-44:13

We're not streaming this service, are we?

    44:13-44:13

    Okay.

    44:14-44:15

I need a do over on that one.

    44:18-44:23

    Nothing is senseless, especially suffering.

    44:28-44:38

We learned this from Job, spoiler alert, but we learn this reality through the cross of Jesus Christ.

    44:41-45:35

Because I imagine if we were there while our Lord was being crucified, there might've been a real temptation for us to see this perfect, sinless, godly man and teach and demonstrate God's goodness and God's power and kindness through miracles and has taught the most profound thing anyone's ever heard. We see this this perfect innocent man being publicly humiliated and executed. I imagine some of us might have looked at Jesus dying on the cross and thought This is senseless. This is so senseless!

    45:38-46:20

But was it? Because it was through the death of Jesus Christ that my sin can be forgiven. So I have to look at the cross and see that God took the absolute worst suffering ever endured and turned it into the greatest thing that ever happened. Can he do that with the suffering that I'm experiencing in my life? Our worship team would make their way up. I just want you to bow your heads and close your eyes for a minute, please.

    46:25-46:30

And I want you to think of whatever you're suffering through right now.

    46:32-46:39

As I said earlier, maybe it's some financial thing, work-related thing, maybe you've experienced loss, maybe it's a health issue.

    46:43-46:53

Whatever your suffering is, I just want you to think about it right now, Just take a moment, think about that thing that is causing you so much suffering.

    46:58-47:01

And with that thing in mind, I wanna ask you one question.

    47:05-47:07

    Will you still worship?

    47:11-47:13

    Heaven is watching.

    47:17-47:18

    God knows the answer.

    47:19-47:22

And Satan is waiting to find out.

    47:25-47:26

Now's your chance to show God.

    47:27-47:37

So I want you to stand up and we're going to worship and you are going to demonstrate, God, I love you, not just your gifts.

When we were kids, we went to this little Methodist church near our home, and when the kids would go, when we would go into Sunday school, our parents would give us some quarters to put in the offering, because they always took an offering for the kids in the Sunday school.

    01:04-01:13

And I remember one particular Sunday, my younger brother was kind of new to the Sunday school thing.

    01:13-01:33

Mom gave us our quarters, we went in, put our offering in, And the lady that ran the Sunday school got up and she said, "We're gonna start today by looking at some slides from vacation Bible school." And they put up like a screen and somebody might need to explain to our younger people what a slide projector is, but they showed slides.

    01:34-01:52

You know, the kids, "Yeah, here we're blowing up balloons and eating crackers." And you know, all these just slide after slide after slide of vacation Bible school Until finally, my younger brother stood up and he hollered, "This movie stinks!

    01:53-01:54

    "I want my money back!"

    01:55-01:56

    (congregation laughing)

    01:59-02:00

    Adorable.

    02:03-02:04

Do you know what's extra cute about that?

    02:05-02:08

That wasn't his money that he gave.

    02:10-02:16

And that money wasn't given as some sort of price of admission.

    02:19-02:21

    That's a cute story, isn't it?

    02:22-02:23

But do you know what's not cute?

    02:24-02:27

Is some of us never grow out of that mentality.

    02:29-02:32

Some of us never grow out of the mentality of, that's my money.

    02:35-02:37

It should be used to serve me.

    02:40-02:46

We are so squirrely when it comes to money.

    02:49-02:52

Been feeling that all month going through this series.

    02:52-02:57

It's just a tension that comes when we talk about money.

    02:57-02:57

    Why is that?

    03:00-03:04

    Why don't people cheerfully give?

    03:04-03:14

Give. I suppose there's lots of reasons.

    03:17-03:19

You see the money as yours.

    03:21-04:20

You see supporting missions as other people's problem. You don't see money as a tool and as a gauge. But I think the biggest reason we get so squirrelly about money in the church is most people don't see it. Most people don't see giving as as worship. And that's what giving is. Giving is an act of worship. Like how do we get there? Let's bow our heads and I'm gonna ask that you would please pray for me and I will pray for you. And let's see what the Bible says about this stuff.

    04:21-05:08

Let's pray. Father, we started this series with a message called "Money's Where I Need to Repent." And I'm sure, Father, there are people here that are like, "I need to do that, but I'm not sure how." And I just pray that your Word would equip us to truly repent and watch you be at work in our lives like never before. It's all yours, God, and you're testing us to see if we really get that.

    05:12-05:29

Father, I just pray as Taylor did earlier, I just pray against any defenses that are being put up, but there would just be an eagerness for your Word and responding to it.

    05:30-05:32

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    05:33-05:39

And all of God's people said, "Amen." So where do we start?

    05:39-05:42

    Let's start where God started.

    05:43-05:45

I wanna talk about the tithe.

    05:46-05:48

    What is a tithe?

    05:49-05:52

    A tithe is 10%.

    05:54-05:57

Today, we use the word generically.

    05:59-06:07

We use it as a term incorrectly slapped on all giving, no matter the amount.

    06:09-06:12

But the tithe is where God began historically.

    06:13-06:15

You see it actually before the law.

    06:16-06:20

Abraham tithed to Melchizedek, Genesis 14.

    06:23-06:27

You see Jacob promising a tithe in Genesis 28.

    06:27-06:35

But then when you get to the Old Testament law, that's when we start to understand this concept of the tithe a little more.

    06:35-06:43

But the tithe for Old Testament Israel wasn't just 10%.

    06:44-06:49

Did you know that in Old Testament law, there were three tithes?

    06:50-06:52

One was for the Levites, numbers 18.

    06:53-06:57

One was for their festivals that the nation had, that's Deuteronomy 14.

    06:58-07:05

But every three years, They had another tithe that went to the poor, Deuteronomy 26.

    07:05-07:10

That meant for Israel, their tithe was about 23 1/3%.

    07:12-07:21

And understand that for Old Testament Israel, tithing wasn't giving an offering.

    07:23-07:25

    Tithing was obligated.

    07:27-07:28

    They were obligated to tithe.

    07:29-07:38

Tithing was required giving and under Israel's economy, it was really to, you could say, support the government.

    07:39-07:44

So for Old Testament Israel, tithing was a lot like paying your taxes.

    07:48-07:54

But the Old Testament didn't stop at the tithe, Old Testament giving, that's where it started.

    07:55-07:59

because freewill giving was on top of the tithe.

    07:59-08:06

You remember a couple of weeks ago, we looked at 1 Chronicles 29, that offering would have been on top of their tithe.

    08:07-08:16

You see other freewill offerings, Deuteronomy 16, Exodus 35, all through the Old Testament, freewill offerings.

    08:18-08:20

But that's a little bit about the tithe.

    08:21-08:27

But there's another concept in the Old Testament that I think is grossly lost on the church.

    08:29-08:31

And that's the concept of first fruits.

    08:34-08:35

That's all through the Old Testament.

    08:35-08:47

Exodus 23, Exodus 34, Leviticus 2, Leviticus 23, Numbers 18, over and over and over and over, you see about giving God the first fruits.

    08:47-08:48

    What is that?

    08:49-08:50

That's exactly what it sounds like.

    08:50-08:54

It's giving God first and best.

    08:55-09:00

For Israel, it would have been grain and wool and honey.

    09:00-09:04

You give God back first and best, but it was also money.

    09:07-09:12

And giving God the first and the best was Israel's way of communicating to God.

    09:12-09:21

God, everything is from you, and we're giving you back the very first and the very best as our way of saying, thank you.

    09:23-09:27

And we trust you that you're going to keep providing.

    09:28-09:33

We're showing that trust, God, by giving you the very first and the very best.

    09:37-09:43

Tithing and firstfruits are principles for giving that are lost on the church.

    09:45-09:52

Because do you know how many Christians typically give, it looks something like this.

    09:53-09:54

    We get paid.

    09:56-09:58

The first thing we do, we gotta pay the bills, right?

    09:58-10:03

We gotta pay the house payment, the car payment, the utilities, we gotta pay the bills, we gotta buy the groceries.

    10:04-10:05

Okay, so now we have some money left.

    10:06-10:09

And with that money, we get the things that we want, right?

    10:10-10:13

And then we have some money left after that.

    10:16-10:24

And we maybe, maybe give to God out of the leftovers.

    10:27-10:42

And there are people that will give God 10% of the leftovers and feel pretty proud of themselves saying that they're tithing.

    10:44-10:45

    They're giving 10% of what's left.

    10:50-10:53

You gotta really manipulate the math on that one.

    10:58-10:59

    That's not tithing.

    11:01-11:04

10% of the leftovers is not tithing.

    11:05-11:08

    And listen, it's not worship.

    11:10-11:14

It is not worship to offer God out of what you have left over.

    11:14-11:15

    It's not worship.

    11:18-11:20

Right now, I can feel it.

    11:20-11:27

Right now, there are people that are like, "Oh, oh, Pastor Jeff, this is, "what you're talking about is so Old Testament.

    11:28-11:45

"I don't know if you've read the New Testament, Pastor Jeff, "but tithing isn't commanded in the New Testament." Pastor Jeff, you're being, right now, you're being so legalistic because tithing is not commanded in the New Testament.

    11:46-11:47

I've had people say that to me.

    11:50-11:57

Let me ask you this, when people have that objection, this is legalistic, it's not commanded in the New Testament.

    11:57-12:07

When people have that objection, are they wanting to justify giving God more than 10% or are they wanting to justify giving God less than 10%?

    12:08-12:09

    Which is it?

    12:11-12:12

    It's less.

    12:13-12:21

I've never had the guy, and I've been in ministry for a while, I've never had the guy that's like, "Tithing's legalistic, I wanna give way more than that.

    12:22-12:28

Is that okay?" I've never had that guy, but it's always a justification to give less than 10%.

    12:32-12:42

You're like, "Well, is tithing for today?" Well, listen, I want you to hear me very closely because this is important.

    12:44-12:50

You know, if you've been around at all, how much I despise legalism.

    12:50-12:51

    I hate legalism.

    12:57-13:03

But every example of giving in the New Testament is beyond the tithe, every example.

    13:05-13:08

You know, what is the purpose of the Old Testament law?

    13:09-13:12

Well, the Bible tells us the Old Testament law is the tutor.

    13:13-13:23

The Old Testament law is to help us understand the New Testament and tithing and first fruits in the Old Testament.

    13:23-13:30

Those were the tutors to teach us about the subject of giving to God.

    13:34-13:36

    There's value in these principles.

    13:37-13:41

And I think a lot of Christians are throwing a lot of babies out with a lot of bathwater here.

    13:42-13:43

    There's value in the principles.

    13:44-13:49

There's value in, okay, I'm going to give a measured portion back to God.

    13:50-13:52

And there's value in saying, I'm going to give to God first.

    13:54-13:55

There's values in the principles, right?

    13:57-13:57

    Like the Sabbath.

    13:59-14:01

Is the Sabbath commanded in the New Testament?

    14:01-14:06

No, but isn't it a good idea to take a day away from working?

    14:07-14:10

    Yeah, it is.

    14:13-14:21

But let me ask you this, for those you're still digging your heels in saying, we don't live under the law, Pastor Jeff, we don't live under the law, we live under grace.

    14:23-14:28

And I would ask you this, does grace require less than the law required?

    14:30-14:31

    or does grace require more?

    14:35-14:41

According to our Lord, grace requires much more, right?

    14:42-14:46

Like we're gonna be talking about the Sermon on the Mount, we're gonna be going through that next year.

    14:47-14:51

And spoiler alert, Jesus talks about murder.

    14:53-14:57

Now in the Old Testament law, you were forbidden to murder, all in favor.

    14:59-15:02

But nobody's like, "I live under the new covenant, Pastor Jeff.

    15:02-15:05

I'm allowed to murder." What did Jesus say?

    15:06-15:08

Jesus said, "No, I require more.

    15:09-15:14

If you hate, that's murder." The Old Testament says don't commit adultery.

    15:15-15:19

You're like, "Yeah, but I live under the new covenant." What did Jesus say?

    15:21-15:23

Does the new covenant require more or less?

    15:24-15:25

    It requires more.

    15:25-15:28

Jesus said adultery is looking at a woman lustfully.

    15:30-15:32

    Jesus always took it more.

    15:33-15:39

You see, grace allows us to jump higher than the law demanded we jump.

    15:42-15:50

And when Jesus says to go the second mile, he assumes you already went the first.

    15:53-16:08

So I gotta tell you, church, when it comes to giving and some Christians' poor habits of giving, I don't think fear of legalism is really the problem.

    16:13-16:16

I wanna share some stats with you I read this past week.

    16:19-16:24

About 5% of churchgoers tithe regularly, 5%.

    16:27-16:38

And somewhere between 50 and 80%, somewhere in that range of those who give to the church, give about 2% of their income.

    16:42-16:43

I want you to think about that.

    16:45-16:51

Somewhere between 50 to 80% of people who give, give 2% of their income.

    16:51-16:53

What did we just say under the law?

    16:53-16:56

How much did the Old Testament Israelites give?

    16:57-16:59

They give 23 and a third percent.

    16:59-17:00

Do you know what that means?

    17:02-17:10

That means the law was over 10 times more effective than grace.

    17:11-17:12

    Is that how that works?

    17:15-17:19

Or if we're like just doing a single tie, that we're like, let's just talk about a 10% tithe.

    17:20-17:28

Okay, that means the law is still five times more than the 2% that people are giving today.

    17:32-17:44

It's a sad reality, my friends, that we who live under grace are giving embarrassingly less than those who lived under the law.

    17:47-17:49

So here's a really good question I want you to ask yourself.

    17:52-18:00

If everyone in this church gave the way you give, how would we be doing as a church?

    18:04-18:14

So I encourage you to take some notes because we're gonna see what the New Testament teaches about how to give.

    18:16-18:21

If everyone in the church gave like you do, how would Harvest be doing?

    18:25-18:31

Well, if your answer is, if everyone gave like I give, we'd have to meet in the parking lot.

    18:31-18:32

    That's not good.

    18:35-18:40

If your answer is, well, if everyone in the church gave like I do, we'd have to support missions with Arby's coupons.

    18:40-18:41

    That's not good.

    18:44-18:45

So what does the Bible say?

    18:47-18:57

1 Corinthians 16, verses one through four, just giving you a bit of an on-ramp here, Paul was taking a collection for the poor Christians in Jerusalem.

    18:59-19:12

And when we get to 2 Corinthians 8 and 9, he revisits the subject, and he encourages the Corinthians to give by highlighting the Macedonians example.

    19:12-19:22

And there's one verse we're gonna look at today, because this one verse captures the heart of how to make your giving an act of worship.

    19:24-19:24

    All right?

    19:25-19:27

So how to make giving an act of worship.

    19:27-19:30

Let's look at the verse, then we're gonna break it down.

    19:32-19:35

    1 Corinthians, I'm sorry, 2 Corinthians 9, verse seven.

    19:36-20:00

Says, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, "not reluctantly or under compulsion, "for God loves a cheerful giver." That one verse tells us how to make giving an act of worship.

    20:03-20:04

    So let's break it down.

    20:04-20:06

First thing you need to do is give intentionally.

    20:08-20:09

    Give intentionally.

    20:09-20:10

Look at the first part of verse seven.

    20:11-20:28

It says, "Each one must give as he has decided in his heart." Paul says, "Each one must give." That's assuming that everyone's on board with giving.

    20:28-20:30

    Each one must give.

    20:30-20:33

Sadly though, the reality is not everyone is on board with giving.

    20:36-20:46

I also read this past week, the average amount given per churchgoer, The average amount given is about $17 a week.

    20:49-20:49

    Ouch, right?

    20:52-20:55

Doing the math on that, it's about $74 a month.

    20:58-21:02

That breaks down to $884 a year given.

    21:07-21:12

Each one must give, he says, as he has decided.

    21:12-21:13

Do you know what those numbers tell me?

    21:13-21:16

Do you know what it tells me when somebody is giving $17 a week?

    21:19-21:21

That tells me that there's no real thought behind giving.

    21:24-21:26

    Giving must be intentional.

    21:27-21:29

    It must be intentional.

    21:30-21:31

Like, well, what does that mean?

    21:32-21:33

What does it mean to give intentional?

    21:34-21:35

Well, it means a lot of things.

    21:35-21:35

    I'm gonna give you three.

    21:36-21:42

Intentional giving means this, first of all, letter A, when I'm paid, I give to God first every time.

    21:44-21:46

I had to get back to that first fruits thing, right?

    21:47-21:48

    That's intentional.

    21:48-21:54

When I'm paid, the first thing that I do is give to God.

    21:56-22:10

Many people give sporadically, like here and there, when I think about it, when I'm feeling it, when I maybe have a couple of extra bucks, when I remember, when I remember I give.

    22:10-22:12

Do you know God doesn't give to you like that?

    22:13-22:13

    Does he?

    22:16-22:18

Is that how God provides for you?

    22:21-22:29

Oh, when I think about it, when I remember, some people don't give if they don't attend.

    22:30-22:40

as if, getting back to little brother at Sunday school, as if their offering's the admission fee, as if the offering was a tip for a good service.

    22:42-22:48

But some people don't give if they don't attend, if they're on vacation, they have the flu, if they're out of town.

    22:52-22:54

You don't do that with your house payment, I hope.

    22:56-23:00

I was on vacation two weeks last month, So I don't need to pay a house payment.

    23:01-23:03

How would that fly with the bank?

    23:04-23:05

    Probably not well.

    23:07-23:09

But for some reason we're okay with doing that with God?

    23:09-23:10

    Really?

    23:13-23:17

So intentional giving means this, when I'm paid, I give to God first every time.

    23:17-23:19

So look, it's real easy, my friends.

    23:19-23:30

When you receive money, direct deposit, a paycheck, When you receive money, the first thing you do is give.

    23:30-23:32

Thank you for providing for me, God, and as a way of worshiping you and saying thank you, I'm going to give back.

    23:44-23:45

    Giving shouldn't be an afterthought.

    23:48-23:53

Intentional giving, giving is worship, means giving is the first thought that you have when God gives to you.

    01:55-01:56

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    01:57-02:00

All of God's people said, amen.

    02:03-02:19

Many years ago, this would have been about late 90s, I was going to downtown Pittsburgh with a friend of mine And we pulled in off the street to park.

    02:19-02:29

And as soon as I stepped out of my car, this little skinny dude runs up to me and he goes, yo man, you got 75 cents?

    02:32-02:37

And I thought, what a strange and small request that is.

    02:38-02:39

    Oddly specific.

    02:40-02:41

    So I had to ask.

    02:43-02:46

    I said, "That's very specific.

    02:46-02:55

"What do you need 75 cents for?" He said, "You know, man, I gotta go get my swerve on." And he did this dance.

    02:58-03:05

And I laughed and I laughed and I had no idea what it meant to get your swerve on.

    03:08-03:09

    And you know what?

    03:09-03:11

I was gonna share this story, but I'm like, I better look that up.

    03:12-03:12

    (congregation laughing)

    03:13-03:14

    Good idea, right?

    03:15-03:17

Do you know what it means to get your sport of one?

    03:18-03:19

    It means to get drunk.

    03:20-03:22

So now I have new questions.

    03:24-03:25

Where are you getting drunk for 75 cents?

    03:26-03:27

    (congregation laughing)

    03:32-03:40

You know, like I said, this was the late 90s and I kid you not, I've thought about that man so often.

    03:42-03:42

    You're like, how often?

    03:44-03:52

In my coat pocket, I always carry three quarters in case I ever meet him again.

    03:54-03:54

    (congregation laughing)

    03:57-04:05

Money is a tool for everything, including getting your swerve on, I guess.

    04:07-04:11

Now we've seen over the last couple of weeks, a lot of very profound things about money.

    04:11-04:48

But today I'm going to share with you what the Bible tells us is the most profound thing about money. You can spend it here and now in a way that rewards you for eternity. And that is the ultimate ROI. Now I'm gonna have to maybe I'm gonna explain this term for some of you because you see, my wife's in finance, so I know all these fancy terms.

    04:49-04:50

    But what is an ROI?

    04:50-04:51

Do you know what it is?

    04:51-04:52

Shout it out if you know.

    04:54-04:58

Okay, so I thought I was smart learning something and you already knew this.

    04:59-05:01

Yes, it is return on investment.

    05:02-05:10

That is the financial metric that measures the profitability of an investment.

    05:12-05:22

So, let me ask you, what is the most profitable thing that you can do with money?

    05:28-05:30

And here is where we find the profound truth.

    05:30-05:42

the most profitable thing you can do with money is invest it in treasure in heaven that you will have for eternity.

    05:45-05:47

    There's nothing greater.

    05:47-05:51

There's no bigger return on investment than that.

    05:56-06:02

It's a wild concept, But it keeps coming up over and over in the Bible, right?

    06:02-06:20

Like Matthew 6, 20, Jesus said, "Lay for yourselves treasures in heaven." Matthew 19, 21, "Give it to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven." Luke 12, 33, "Provide for yourselves with money bags that do not grow old with a treasure in the heavens." That does not fail.

    06:21-06:31

Hebrews 11, 26, talking about Moses, saying he was looking to the reward, which is the treasure that was awaiting him in heaven.

    06:33-06:35

You're like, okay, what is treasure in heaven?

    06:35-06:35

    What is it?

    06:36-06:37

I'm sure you've heard of it, right?

    06:38-06:41

You've heard that term thrown around in church.

    06:41-06:43

You've read it in your Bibles.

    06:43-06:46

Like what exactly is treasure in heaven?

    06:50-07:25

Well, I can't imagine that it's treasure in the sense think about it. Like cash, right? I don't imagine we show up in heaven and they just like cut you a check. I don't think it's like that. Like, well then what is treasure in heaven? Well, maybe God's Word isn't specific. Because maybe Maybe it's something we wouldn't understand on earth.

    07:28-07:37

You're like, "So you don't know what it is?" Well, not exactly, but I'll tell you some things that I do know for sure.

    07:37-07:38

I want you to write these things down.

    07:38-07:40

This isn't like your outline points.

    07:40-07:41

This is just on the side.

    07:42-07:45

Here's some things that I do know about treasure in heaven, all right?

    07:45-07:49

First of all, I do know that it's eternal and better, right?

    07:49-07:50

What else do you need to know?

    07:50-07:56

eternal and it's better than anything we will experience or possess on the earth.

    07:56-08:49

I know that. Right? I do know, secondly, that believers will have treasure based on our works. And what are our works? Our works are the things that we have done to advance the kingdom of Jesus Christ using the resources that he's entrusted to us and that includes money. Now let's be clear, salvation is based entirely on the work of Jesus Christ, a hundred percent. There is not a thing that you can do to contribute to your salvation, not a thing. When Jesus Christ died on a He died to take away your sin and the penalty of your sin and the shame and the guilt.

    08:50-08:53

Jesus Christ completely paid the price for your sin.

    08:53-08:56

So salvation is all about Jesus' work.

    08:57-09:04

But when we talk about rewards, you see that is all about your work.

    09:06-09:12

And the Bible says there's different levels of rewards in heaven.

    09:13-09:16

Third thing I know about works, it's eternal and better, it's based on our works.

    09:16-09:19

And I know thirdly, there's different levels of rewards.

    09:19-09:27

You know, the Bible says that there's different levels of hell, that hell is going to be worse for some people than it is for others.

    09:29-09:33

But there's also different levels of reward in heaven.

    09:34-09:38

And right now somebody's saying, hang on a second, hang on a second, Jeff.

    09:38-09:44

How can it be like, I thought heaven was going to be total joy for everyone.

    09:44-09:52

So how can we live in a place where everyone has total joy, but some people have more rewards than others?

    09:52-09:54

And I would say, that's a good question.

    09:56-09:57

    It's sort of like this.

    10:02-10:05

    This bottle is full, right?

    10:07-10:07

    This is full.

    10:09-10:12

And this bottle is full, right?

    10:13-10:17

    This bottle's 15 ounces and this one's 20.

    10:20-10:27

And just sort of imagine that the liquid inside these bottles represents joy of reward in heaven.

    10:28-10:32

Like these two guys in heaven are both full of joy.

    10:32-10:38

It just so happens that one of them has a greater capacity to receive more, you see.

    10:40-10:51

And I believe it is in that sense that some of us will have a greater capacity to receive more joy and rewards in heaven, but we're all gonna be full.

    10:56-11:03

Fourth thing I do know about treasure in heaven is there's no second chance for believers to earn rewards after we die.

    11:04-11:14

We talk about rewards in heaven, they're eternal, and we're gonna get into all that here in a second, but I gotta tell you on the front end, now's your chance to get them.

    11:18-11:32

And then the fifth thing I do know for sure, and there's other things, I just wanted to narrow it down to five here for the sake of time, but the fifth thing I know about treasure in heaven is that it should be motivating us right now.

    11:34-11:40

Honoring God with His stuff will personally reward you for eternity.

    11:41-11:47

All that said, we're gonna look at a, this is a story that Jesus made up here in Luke 16.

    11:48-11:55

And I gotta tell you, it's a very strange story that our Lord would use as an example.

    11:56-11:57

    It's one of my favorites.

    11:59-12:06

But it's, our Lord had a way of telling stories that were very unexpected.

    12:06-12:11

And this is near the top of the list for me in that category.

    12:11-12:14

But look at Luke chapter 16 rather.

    12:15-12:20

It says, "He also said to the disciples, "there was a rich man who had a manager.

    12:23-12:29

"And charges were brought to him "that this man was wasting his possessions.

    12:31-12:36

"And he called him and said to him, "what is this that I hear about you?

    12:38-12:41

"Turn in the account of your management "for you can no longer be manager.

    12:44-12:47

"And the manager said to himself, what shall I do?

    12:48-12:57

"Since my master is taking the management away from me, "I'm not strong enough to dig "and I'm ashamed to beg." Stop there, we got the story?

    12:58-13:09

So this guy was very wealthy, so wealthy, he had this employee on site, apparently, you're gonna see here, he apparently lived on site, that managed all his stuff.

    13:09-13:14

The owner got word that this manager was squandering.

    13:17-13:33

And he says, "You know what, pack it up, you're done." So this manager is like, "What am I gonna do now?" He goes, "Well, I can't dig, and I'm not gonna beg, "and I gotta get out of here.

    13:33-13:55

"What am I gonna do?" Look at verse four, he says, "I've decided what to do, "so that when I'm removed from management, "people may receive me into their houses." He goes, "Ah, okay." And this is what tells us he must have lived on site because losing his job also meant losing his house.

    13:56-13:57

So he goes, "What am I gonna do?

    13:57-14:08

"I'm gonna be homeless." He goes, "Ah." He goes, "I got an idea of how I can set myself up." Look at his plan, verses five through seven.

    14:11-14:49

He says, "So summoning his master's debtors one by one, "he said to the first, 'How much do you owe my master?' "And he said, 'A hundred measures of oil.' "He said to him, 'Take your bill "'and sit down quickly and write 50.' "Then he said to another, 'And how much do you owe?' "He said, 'A hundred measures of wheat.' "He said to him, 'Take your bill and write 80.'" And the Greek language implies that there would have been a line of people that he was doing this with.

    14:50-14:55

Again, it's a made up story, but the language indicates that this went on and on and on.

    14:55-14:56

    He was setting himself up.

    14:56-14:57

    Here's the plan.

    14:58-14:59

He says, "I know what I'm gonna do.

    14:59-15:03

"I'm gonna get all of these people obligated to me.

    15:03-15:14

"They're all gonna be in debt to me." So he calls the people that owe money and he goes, "Hey, got news for you, huge discounts, all right?

    15:14-15:17

"You get a discount and you get a discount "and you get a discount.

    15:17-15:23

"Everybody gets a discount." And he's like, "What's my boss gonna do?

    15:23-15:31

"Fire me, kick me out?" He goes, "It is bargain shopping days." And he gives all these people a discount.

    15:34-15:40

Look at verse eight, it says, "The master," and here's the curve ball here, look at this.

    15:40-15:46

It says, "The master commended the dishonest manager for his shrewdness.

    15:49-15:49

    See what happened there?

    15:50-16:00

The guy that owns all this finds out what he did and he's like, he's like, that was actually brilliant.

    16:00-16:01

    I'm not even mad.

    16:02-16:02

    Like, wow.

    16:03-16:07

Like, hey, that was good thinking because you know you're gonna be kicked out.

    16:07-16:09

    You set yourself up.

    16:11-16:13

    Nicely done, my friend.

    16:15-16:23

Now notice that the manager wasn't praised for being irresponsible or for being wasteful.

    16:24-16:25

He was praised for being smart.

    16:29-16:30

He was praised for being smart.

    16:31-16:32

    What did he do?

    16:32-16:33

What did he do that was so smart?

    16:33-16:35

Here it is, this is the whole point.

    16:35-16:37

Listen, you're gonna miss the whole point of the parable.

    16:39-16:52

He took advantage of his opportunity and manipulated the resources that were under his control in order to win future friends.

    16:54-16:59

I'm gonna say that again, because if you miss that, you missed the point of the whole story.

    16:59-17:09

This manager took advantage of his opportunity to manipulate the resources under his control to win future friends.

    17:11-17:14

That's what Jesus wanted us to get from that story.

    17:17-17:26

Jesus gives us the point and what is kind of a burn on us, church.

    17:27-17:29

Look at what Jesus says, rest of verse eight.

    17:29-17:42

Jesus says, "For the sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light." Do you see what Jesus is saying?

    17:42-17:51

He goes, "The point of this story is this, sinners are more shrewd than saints." Like, what?

    17:52-17:53

    That's what he said.

    17:53-18:16

Jesus said, "Worldly people are smarter at using money to win friends." In other words, Jesus says, "The point of this story is this, when it comes to using money in a way to win people, God's people have a lot to learn from worldly people.

    18:18-18:26

They're working in a very smart way to secure a temporary future.

    18:29-18:33

Shouldn't we be working in such a way thinking about an eternal future?

    18:39-18:47

Because according to our Lord, you can secure for yourself an eternal ROI.

    18:49-18:52

And that's really, I think, the question that we have to ask ourselves today.

    18:53-18:57

Because we can talk about it, we can imagine, you know, what is the treasure in heaven?

    18:58-19:00

And how do I get it?

    19:00-19:09

And I think what we need to do is ask ourselves, Am I going to have an eternal ROI?

    19:10-19:12

Am I going to have treasure in heaven?

    19:16-19:20

Well, straightforwardly from this text, here's four questions to ask yourself.

    19:23-19:25

Are you going to have an eternal ROI?

    19:25-19:29

First question to ask yourself is this, do I use money to win people?

    19:30-19:33

Do I use money to win people?

    19:37-19:43

Look at verse nine, this is Jesus' verse of application based on his parable.

    19:43-20:17

Verse nine, Jesus says, "And I tell you, "make friends for yourselves "by means of unrighteous wealth, "so that when it fails, "they may receive you into eternal dwellings." Do I use money to, like, wait, it sounds like, it sounds like what Jesus is saying is that I should use money to make friends.

    20:20-20:24

Yeah, that's actually exactly what he's saying.

    20:28-20:33

Notice Jesus doesn't say, You should avoid worldly wealth.

    20:34-20:35

    He doesn't say that.

    20:37-20:43

He says you should use worldly wealth strategically to win people.

    20:45-20:46

    Like win who?

    20:46-20:48

    What friends?

    20:48-20:56

Well, he tells us these are believers in heaven who are in heaven because of how we use money.

    20:56-20:57

    That's what he's talking about.

    21:01-21:16

When we die, according to Jesus, we will be welcomed into our eternal home by those that we've reached with the gospel, with our money during our time on earth.

    21:16-21:17

    That's what he said.

    21:19-21:31

That somehow we're going to enter into heaven and these people are going to know us and they're going to appreciate us and they're going to welcome us.

    21:33-21:34

    They're gonna know.

    21:36-21:41

It was because of the investment that you made that I ended up here.

    21:42-21:44

And I just wanted to thank you for that.

    21:48-21:48

    Wow.

    21:51-21:59

Jesus says, "Make such an investment." Notice he says, "So when it fails," when it fails, by the way, money will fail.

    21:59-22:00

    It's not gonna last forever.

    22:02-22:07

But saved souls in heaven will last forever.

    22:11-22:12

What's he telling us to do?

    22:12-22:14

He's telling us to invest in missions.

    22:15-22:16

    Invest in the mission here.

    22:17-22:20

    Invest in missions abroad.

    22:22-22:28

Invest in ministries that are using an open door for outreach as a result of this hurricane.

    22:32-22:33

    These hurricanes.

    22:34-22:39

He's talking about investing in things like, I don't know, what were these three guys up here talking about a few minutes ago?

    22:41-22:46

A church building to reach more people in our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    22:46-22:49

Making that kind of an investment will win you eternal friends.

    22:52-22:58

will get you an eternal return on investment.

    23:02-23:25

You know, back in 2010, when I was invited to go to Chicago to train to plant this church, when you move out there, the organization, they get you and your family an apartment and they give you like a monthly stipend to live on because they didn't want you to work outside of, they just wanted you to train, right?

    23:25-23:28

So they're like, we're gonna feed you, we'll put you up, we just want you to train.

    23:28-23:34

But part of that deal meant that we had to raise a chunk of our support.

    23:36-23:41

And we needed to raise about $9,000 that I didn't have.

    23:41-23:43

Anybody got $9,000 on you right now?

    23:43-23:46

Like you can just drop, I didn't have that.

    23:48-23:53

So we had to raise that portion of the support.

    23:55-24:08

There was a kid in the church, a farmer, he was a farmer, I was good friends with his parents, and their son is a farmer, they were farmers.

    24:09-24:17

And he raised a steer that he entered into the Butler Farm Show.

    24:17-24:22

And wouldn't you know it, that year, this kid won.

    24:26-24:27

    Actually, the steer won.

    24:29-24:31

But it was this kid's steer.

    24:36-24:42

And the steer was purchased on the spot for an insane amount of money.

    24:43-24:47

Corporations will come in and buy it up, and that's what happened.

    24:47-24:51

I think the gas company bought this steer for a lot of money.

    24:54-25:24

That little boy went through his parents and said, "Hey, is it okay if I tithe on the money "that I got from this steer to send Pastor Jeff "to Chicago to train?" You know, I saw that little boy because I was really close, actually, also with his grandmother, and she had passed away recently, and I saw him at the funeral.

    25:24-25:25

He's not a little boy anymore.

    25:27-25:29

    He's a strapping young man.

    25:32-25:38

And at the funeral home, I pulled him aside, and his name's Jake.

    25:39-25:53

I said, "Jake, I gotta tell you something." I said, "Do you know our church is reaching "a lot of people in our community?

    25:55-25:57

"And recently we just baptized a bunch of people.

    25:58-26:12

"And do you know with our church, we stream these services "and I get messages literally from all over the world." I was telling this young man, I said, "I get messages from Africa, from all over Asia.

    26:12-26:13

    "I get messages from people.

    26:13-26:16

"We watch you every week, we follow this ministry.

    26:17-26:26

"Thank you for ministering God's Word to us." And I get messages from all over the United States, "Watch you every week, we appreciate your ministry.

    26:27-26:32

"Thank you." I said, "We have been able to reach people with the gospel.

    26:33-26:42

"And we have been able to support missions, "not just locally, but internationally." And I put my arm around him and I said, "You know what, Jake?

    26:44-27:02

"All of this happened "because a little boy sold a cow." So do you think that there are going to be people in heaven someday waiting for him to show up?

    27:04-27:05

Like, we know what you did.

    27:06-27:10

And we just wanted to say thank you for making an investment.

    27:12-27:14

and a ministry that reached me with the gospel.

    27:18-27:44

You know, I can't imagine there's anyone in heaven right now looking back at their time on earth saying, "I just wish that I would have spent more money on trinkets and movies." But I imagine there are some people thinking, "You know, if I could go back and do it over again, I'd spend more money on advancing the kingdom by winning people.

    27:46-27:47

So that's the first question you have to ask yourself.

    27:48-27:50

Are you going to have an eternal ROI?

    27:51-27:55

Well, do you use money to win people?

    27:57-27:59

That's the whole point of Jesus' story.

    28:01-28:03

But Jesus doesn't stop there, he goes on.

    28:03-28:08

Second question you have to ask yourself, am I going to have an eternal ROI?

    28:08-28:11

Now question number two is this, what am I doing with money right now?

    28:13-28:14

    Look at verse 10.

    28:17-28:23

He says, "One who is faithful in a very little "is also faithful in much.

    28:23-28:32

"And one who is dishonest in a very little "is also dishonest in much." Now this is an obvious truth, right?

    28:32-28:36

The amount of money that you have doesn't determine faithfulness.

    28:37-28:38

    Your character does.

    28:40-28:41

    Listen, here's the thing.

    28:42-28:56

If you really believe, I mean, if you really believe, and I know some of you do, but if you really believe that there's an eternal ROI, you're going to invest in the kingdom no matter how much you have.

    28:57-28:59

You're gonna give a part of what you have.

    29:02-29:08

But if you don't really believe, You're not gonna honor God with a little bit.

    29:09-29:15

And you wouldn't honor God even if you had a lot because listen, that's just who you are.

    29:18-29:19

    That's just who you are.

    29:23-29:24

    Think of it this way.

    29:25-29:39

A little kid who gives to God a portion of his allowance is going to become a teenager who gives to God a portion of his part-time job earnings.

    29:41-29:42

I've seen that again and again.

    29:43-29:46

If you're faithful with a little, you're gonna be faithful with a lot.

    29:50-29:53

But if you're unfaithful with a little, Jesus said you're gonna be unfaithful with much.

    29:54-30:02

Because my friends, if you wouldn't give God 10% of 1,000, I promise you, you wouldn't give God 10% of 100,000.

    30:05-30:13

And this truth of Jesus right here just completely destroys all of our if onlys.

    30:15-30:17

Oh, I hear this all the time.

    30:18-30:23

Oh, Pastor Jeff, if I had more, if I had more, I'd give.

    30:24-30:30

Oh, Pastor Jeff, if I had it, I would give to the church.

    30:30-30:32

I would help you pay for that building.

    30:32-30:34

Oh, Pastor Jeff, if I had more, I'd give.

    30:34-30:36

And I say with all due respect, no, you wouldn't.

    30:38-30:38

    You wouldn't.

    30:43-30:51

Because you see, Jesus isn't asking, what would you do with hypothetical money?

    30:54-30:56

He's saying, what are you doing with the money you have right now?

    31:01-31:58

This implies that we're always being tested little things. We're always being tested. You know, it's sort of like you have a kid who wants a puppy and parents give a little test to say, "Well, you know, let's get him a goldfish first. And if you can keep the goldfish alive, then we'll talk about a puppy. And we watch the kid to see, is he feeding the fish? Is he cleaning the tank? Is he taking it for walks? I don't know what you do with a goldfish, but you get the point. You test with a little. What you do with a little, you'll do with a lot. And my friends, you need to see, there's people here, they're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, I don't You don't have very much.

    31:59-32:06

That little bit that you have, you need to look at that as a goldfish because your heavenly Father is watching what you do with that.

    32:08-32:09

Like, can I trust him with more?

    32:10-32:11

    Can I give her more?

    32:17-32:19

God wants to see how you're handling it.

    32:22-32:35

I've had people tell me over the years, you know, Pastor Jeff, if I hit the lottery, hit the lottery I'd give." And I'm like, "Don't play the lottery." You know what else you shouldn't do though?

    32:36-32:43

Don't tell me, and absolutely do not tell God what you would do with money you don't have.

    32:46-32:50

Because the truth is God is looking at what you're doing with money right now.

    32:54-32:54

    Right?

    32:55-32:57

What are you doing with it right now?

    32:57-33:07

Number three, same train of thought here, but question number three is this, would God say that I'm faithful with his money?

    33:09-33:11

What you have in verse 11 and 12 are parallel statements.

    33:12-33:20

You're gonna see God wants to give us true riches of our own, that's the treasure in heaven, but he's not gonna give it to us if we're unfaithful with his money on earth.

    33:21-33:22

    Look at verse 11.

    33:23-33:46

Jesus says, "If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches?" Jesus said, "If you can't handle a little bit of just earthly cash, who's going to give you treasure in heaven?" Look at verse 12.

    33:47-33:59

He says, "And if you have not been faithful and that which is another's, who will give you that which is your own?

    34:01-34:09

If you can't handle someone else's money, gods, you won't be given your own.

    34:11-34:13

You know, that's opposite of how we say that, right?

    34:14-34:15

    Do you notice that?

    34:16-34:16

    That's opposite.

    34:17-34:24

We say, if you can't be trusted with your own stuff, then you can't be trusted with somebody else's.

    34:24-34:25

    That's how we say it.

    34:25-34:35

Like for example, if you completely trash your car and you need to borrow a vehicle and you come to me, I would say, "No, no, no, no, no.

    34:37-34:39

"I've seen how you take care of your car.

    34:40-34:46

"And if you're gonna trash your car, "you can't borrow mine." But see, that's not how Jesus said it.

    34:48-34:49

    He said it completely opposite.

    34:50-35:02

Jesus is saying, "If you can't handle my money, I'm not going to give you your own." So do you want an eternal ROI?

    35:05-35:20

Jesus said, "It's given to those who are faithful with God's money during this life." You're a good steward now, you're going to be an owner in heaven.

    35:23-35:26

Would God say that you're faithful with his money?

    35:27-35:39

Then finally, last and I would say maybe most important, the question that all of these other questions, you know, sort of fall under this, am I serving God or money?

    35:40-35:41

    Look at verse 13.

    35:44-35:46

No servant can serve two masters.

    35:48-35:55

Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

    35:58-35:59

You cannot serve God in money.

    36:03-36:13

Someone or something has your attention, has your devotion, has your energy, and your time, and your focus, and it's either God or money.

    36:13-36:14

And the question is, who are you serving?

    36:16-36:17

    Who are you serving?

    36:20-36:21

    Because it can't be both.

    36:27-36:32

Do you notice like this time of year, I'm a little bit on edge.

    36:34-36:35

    Do you know why?

    36:37-36:38

Do you know what's bothering me?

    36:40-36:40

    Halloween.

    36:43-36:44

    Do you know why?

    36:44-36:45

    It's nothing you did.

    36:47-36:48

    It's from a previous ministry.

    36:50-36:59

Years, I dreaded when the calendar turned to October because there were two camps in the church.

    37:02-37:43

There was one camp that said, "Pastor Jeff, we need to offer a trick-or-treat alternative "because if we don't, we're telling the kids "they need to be all trick-or-treating, "and that is bad, we need to offer an alternative." And then there was another equally vocal group that said, "Offering a trick-or-treat alternative "means we're imitating the world, "we're acting just like the world, "we need to stand out from the world, "we shouldn't offer an alternative." So every year I about had a nervous breakdown because as a pastor, believe me, what I want to do is serve you.

    37:43-37:49

But I had two opposite sides that I could not serve them both at the same time.

    37:50-37:52

So every year I was gonna get a beating from someone.

    37:53-37:55

So I had to decide who do I want it from this year?

    37:58-38:02

But you see my point, it's the same principle with God and money.

    38:04-38:05

    They're opposing masters.

    38:08-38:12

And opposing masters demand opposing things.

    38:12-38:19

You can't go down a path that will allow you to serve God and money at the same time.

    38:23-38:25

So why is Jesus bringing that up here?

    38:27-38:35

Because this is the obstacle for honoring God with his stuff on earth.

    38:37-38:42

It's the attitude that keeps people from coming to church this month.

    38:47-38:52

It's the attitude that says, no one's telling me what to do with my money.

    38:54-38:56

I earned it, it belongs to me.

    38:58-38:59

    It's mine.

    38:59-39:05

Now, you're serving money when you have that attitude.

    39:08-39:12

Because notice Jesus didn't say, "Well, you know what, children?

    39:14-39:29

You shouldn't try to serve God and money." Jesus said you cannot serve God in money, but you can serve God with money.

    39:32-40:03

And when you get that, ultimately, the benefit's gonna be yours, because you're not only going to bless people by winning friends who are going to greet you in heaven, but you're also going to have an everlasting treasure that's waiting for you there, an eternal ROI.

    40:04-40:05

    Let's pray.

    40:07-40:16

Father in heaven, there is so much about this passage of your word that runs contrary to the way that we normally think.

    40:17-40:28

And I'm sure there are people who are digging their heels in at the thought of even talking about money, but Jesus didn't shy away from that.

    40:29-40:30

And we're not shying away from repeating.

    40:33-40:41

Father, I pray this month we would all take a fresh look at the purpose of money.

    40:41-40:48

And here Jesus said we can use it to win friends for eternity, to make an investment in eternity.

    40:51-40:57

And if we really believe that, we'd have to be pretty stupid to not go after that.

    40:58-41:11

So Father, I pray for repentance that starts in a changing of our minds where we reevaluate whose stuff it is and what we're doing with it.

    41:12-41:20

That Father, you put us on a course that we would honor you with what you're allowing to pass through our hands.

    41:21-41:23

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Luke 16:1-13

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Explain, in your own words, the lesson of the parable of the dishonest manager. What was Jesus’ point?

  3. “If I had more money, I’d give.” According to Jesus in Luke 16:10, is this true? Why or why not?

  4. What, exactly, are “the true riches” (Luke 16:11, aka “treasure in heaven”)? What will they look like?
