    In our service this morning.

    00:01-00:11

You remember when Darren got up to lead worship, he said, "Jesus lived a sinless life." That's why Jesus was circumcised.

    00:11-00:12

    That's why he was baptized.

    00:13-00:15

That's why he lived 33 years on the earth.

    00:16-00:25

Jesus Christ had to live a perfect life because he wants to put that on your account.

    00:26-00:26

    Do you see?

    00:28-00:30

Jesus did live a sinless life.

    00:33-00:34

    None of us have.

    00:36-00:37

    And God demands perfection.

    00:39-00:40

    So what do we do?

    00:41-00:49

Well, Jesus Christ lived a sinless life, and the Bible tells us that when we receive him by faith, he gives us his life.

    00:54-01:02

And when God sees us, what he sees is perfection, not because of what we have done, but because we have received by faith what Jesus Christ has done.

    01:02-01:03

    Does that make sense?

    01:06-01:08

Well, moving on through the text, verse 22.

    01:08-01:18

"And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord.

    01:19-01:31

As it is written in the law of the Lord, every male who first opens a womb shall be called holy to the Lord." What is this purification? Again, this is from the Old Testament law.

    01:31-01:39

Forty days after the birth of a male child, you would go for the purification.

    01:41-01:45

And that firstborn male child was presented to the Lord.

    01:45-01:49

That's from Exodus chapter 13 and verse 2 that Luke is quoting from here.

    01:51-02:09

And then verse 24 says, "And to offer a sacrifice according to what is said," here it is again, "in the law of the Lord, a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons." And what this sacrifice shows us is that Mary and Joseph were poor.

    02:10-02:23

If you look back in Leviticus 12, if you had the means, you were to offer a lamb and a bird, but God made provision for people who didn't have the money to afford a lamb or didn't have the means to acquire one.

    02:24-02:27

He says, you can present two birds.

    02:29-02:46

Now, most of us, I would assume, are familiar on some level with the Christmas story, Mary and Joseph, the shepherds, we talked about them, the angel showing up and the magi, we'll talk about them probably next year.

    02:49-03:38

But we're going to look at a man here in Scripture this morning that probably most of us are not familiar with and his name is Simeon. And verses 25 through 28 sort of give us an on-ramp for this baby dedication speech that he gives. So I want us to look at that. Verse 25, "Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. And this man was righteous and devout. He was obviously a believer and righteous and devout. These are words that describe his attitude and his actions. It says he was waiting for the consolation of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon him. This is saying a lot here. What is the consolation of Israel?

    03:38-03:43

What that means is Simeon was waiting for the Messiah to come.

    03:44-03:51

You know, all through the Old Testament, clear from Genesis 315, God has promised Isaiah 53.

    03:53-04:02

God has promised that his Messiah was going to come and he was going to suffer and he was going to offer himself as a sacrifice.

    04:02-04:05

And eventually, he was going to reign over everything.

    04:05-04:14

And God made promise after promise after promise of who this Messiah would be, and what he would look like, and where he'd be born, and what his ministry would be like.

    04:15-04:18

And Simeon was waiting for that.

    04:19-04:51

He says, "I know that God has promised a Messiah, and I'm waiting, and I know it's happening." And your Bible says, "The Holy Spirit was upon him." understand the Holy Spirit did not indwell believers until Pentecost. You know, the day that we live in, when somebody receives Jesus Christ by faith, the Bible says the Holy Spirit indwells you, and that's true for all believers.

    04:51-05:05

It's not like, well, there's some believers that don't have the Holy Spirit, there are some believers that do have the Holy Spirit. That's not true. If You have God's Holy Spirit. He resides in you.

    05:08-05:15

But it was not so in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come upon people to anoint them for a special responsibility.

    05:18-05:30

And Simeon would fall into that category. The Holy Spirit was upon him because of verse 26. This was Simeon's big claim to fame.

    05:32-07:16

And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And we don't know how long Simeon's been waiting, but we do know that it was a long time. How do we know that? We're going to see here in a second when Simeon sees Jesus, he says, "Now I'm ready to go. I don't imagine Simeon was like, you know, 17. Like, I can die now. I imagine he was an old man. And long before the movie came out, this was actually the first bucket list. Did you know that? But this wasn't a bucket list that Simeon came up with. This was one that was given to him. God's like, "Simeon, here's your bucket list. You're not going to kick the bucket until you see the Christ. So could you imagine what that must have been like for Simeon? Could you imagine every day, this could be the day, this could be the day, this could be the day. And what was he looking for? I don't know. What was Simeon looking for? I imagine there were probably days that he just looked up to the sky thinking that the Messiah was going to bust through the clouds or maybe Simeon understood this the scriptures about the you know the Virgin conceiving and giving but maybe he knew that it was going to be a baby that would be the revelation of the Messiah I don't know but I do know that he was holding on to this promise that that Simeon knew that God keeps his word.

    07:20-07:24

Verse 27, "And he came in the spirit into the temple.

    07:24-07:42

"And when the parents brought in the child Jesus "to do for him according to the custom of the law, "he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said." I wanna pause here for a second.

    07:43-07:51

Obviously the Holy Spirit led Simeon to the temple and led Simeon right to Jesus and to his parents.

    07:52-07:56

You know, the scripture doesn't say, but we can sort of fill in the blanks here.

    07:57-07:59

Obviously the Spirit led him up there.

    08:00-08:02

I believe the Holy Spirit led Simeon right to them.

    08:04-08:06

I don't know how that conversation went.

    08:07-08:08

    Excuse me, ma'am.

    08:10-08:10

    Could that be the Messiah?

    08:12-08:13

    Maybe that was it.

    08:16-08:22

Because you know what Mary and Joseph would have said, "Dude, you're totally gonna believe this." They probably didn't call him dude.

    08:23-08:37

"You're totally gonna believe this." An angel showed up and told me that, even though I'd never been with a man, I was going to give birth to this child and that he was going to take King David's throne.

    08:38-08:41

And Samuel was like, "Yeah, yeah, this is him.

    08:41-08:43

    This is the Christ.

    08:43-08:48

This God let me see the Christ, just like he promised.

    08:49-09:01

I gotta be honest with you though, one of the things that I kind of scratched my head over was the fact that here's Simeon, who apparently didn't know Mary and Joseph, just kind of showed up and took the baby up in his arms.

    09:01-09:05

I think just living in the culture we live in, that sounds kind of weird, doesn't it?

    09:06-09:08

Like some stranger walks up and takes your baby.

    09:09-09:15

Well, it was a different culture then, and it was a different time.

    09:17-09:25

And I'm sure Mary and Joseph wouldn't have been opposed to a kind elderly gentleman coming up and wanting to talk to them about their baby.

    09:26-09:27

I'm sure the conversation got rolling.

    09:29-09:32

So let's look at this crazy baby dedication.

    09:33-09:35

    Joyful proclamation, okay?

    09:35-09:36

So do you have the scene?

    09:36-09:55

You know, here's Mary and Joseph, And, you know, I see them in the courts of the temple and these large courts and there were thousands of people walking around these courts and this guy shows up and he knows, he knows this is the Messiah.

    09:55-09:58

And he takes the baby and he praises God.

    10:01-10:03

Let's look at what he says, three things.

    10:06-10:11

This Jesus, God's designed for salvation.

    10:12-10:16

This Jesus, God's designed for salvation.

    10:16-10:18

    Let's look at verses 29 through 33.

    10:20-10:29

He says, "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace according to your word." Wouldn't that have been just like so crazy?

    10:30-10:38

Like you have a baby and somebody shows up and holds your baby and is like, "I can so die now." That's what he was saying, was I can go now.

    10:41-10:45

I can depart in peace because you've kept your word.

    10:47-10:48

Look at verse 30, and here it is.

    10:48-11:10

"For my eyes have seen your salvation, that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for your glory to your people, Israel." And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him.

    11:12-11:16

So this Jesus, God's design for salvation, it's right here in the text.

    11:17-11:20

Jot these down. Three truths about salvation. It's right here in the text.

    11:21-11:28

Three truths about salvation. Number one, salvation is about a person.

    11:31-11:37

capital P. Salvation is about a person.

    11:40-14:50

Salvation is not about a religion. Okay, well, I go to a Christian church occasionally, so that's how I know that I'm safe. Salvation is not about a religion, it's not about a church. Notice Simeon verse 30, when he saw Jesus, he says, "My eyes have seen," what? "Salvation." I see your salvation as I look at this person. What I see is salvation. Salvation is in a person. You know, guest reception as I meet with newer folks, one of the questions I like to ask is, "How did you hear about us?" And some people say, "Well, you know, I was working with this guy that told me about this church, or I heard about you on the radio through, you know, walking the Word." But do you know in heaven? That's not going to be much of a conversation as far as like, "How did you get here?" Hey, what, how did you get into heaven? Jesus Christ? Really? And then you ask the next guy, "How did you get into heaven?" Taylor, what's the answer going to be? Jesus Christ? You're going to pull a billion people in heaven, and do you know what the answer is going to be with every one? Jesus Christ. How did you get here? Because I believed that Jesus Christ died for my sin and that he rose to give me eternal life. That's how I'm here. So understand first of all, salvation is about a person. And you know we say that here and we can agree with that here, but you know what? Sometimes we walk out the door and we lose that. I'd ask you to keep Aaron's uncle in prayer as he has suffered a massive stroke and he's down at UPMC and I was down there on Friday and it was just me in the room with Tom and the nurse was coming in and she was telling me about his condition and then I said well you know kind of a nephew-in-law and a pastor so I came down and I get I asked my favorite where do you go to church?" And she said, "Well, I'm Catholic, but I believe that as long as you believe in a higher power, that's really what matters." And I think sometimes we come to church and we hear the message, and yes, it's about Jesus, yes it's about Jesus, but somehow we lose the clarity that we don't really want to hold on to that. But salvation is about a person. It's not believing that there's a higher power. You just saw here this morning when my brother moved the podium over, he's a higher power, but believing in him is not going to get me to heaven.

    14:53-15:59

It's about, as Simeon said, this one, the Messiah. Second truth about salvation, jot this down, it's a work of God. Salvation is a work of God. Here again, Simeon says, "For my eyes have seen your salvation," verse 31, "that you have prepared. He's talking to God that you have prepared. It is a work of God. It is not a work of yourself. There again, some people hear that and miss it. I understand what you're saying, "Okay, okay Pastor Jeff, it's about Jesus. Therefore, if I try really hard and if I, you know, what do I need to do to... I just believe as long as you try to be a good person and... it's a work of God. You can't do anything.

    16:01-16:12

Your part is believing in what God's already done. But salvation is a work of God. That's why Simeon said, "You've prepared this, God. You've prepared this.

    16:12-18:00

God's doing the work. And number three, you see it right there in the text, it's available to all. It's available to all. He says, "God, you prepared in the presence of all peoples." Now being a mostly Gentile audience, we would miss the impact of this when it's presented to a primarily Jewish audience. But even some of the most devout Jews weren't really sure that the Gentiles were included in God's plan with the Messiah, right? Remember last year we preached through the book of Jonah? What was that book about? Somebody that was sold on "God's salvation is not for all peoples. That's why you asked me to preach in Innova, I'm heading the other way. Well, Simeon here says that God has prepared this salvation in the presence of all peoples. Well, maybe he just meant like all the tribes of Israel. Well, look at verse 32 again. "A light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people, Israel. But you need to see that the salvation that God offers through Jesus Christ is available to everyone. Why am I emphasizing these things? These are the three things about salvation that people miss. It's in a person. It's a work of God and here's the third one, it's not available to all.

    18:00-19:04

Somebody's gonna walk out of here this morning going, "Yeah, I understand what he's saying, but he doesn't know the things that I've done." "Pastor Jeff, you just don't know the things that I've done. I have a rough past, man. I've done some horrible things and done so many things I'm not proud of." Well, my response to that is simply this, which is greater, God's grace or my sin? Let me ask you another question, what sin have you committed? Tell me your sin so heinous that God said, "You know, the brutal death of my son isn't even powerful enough to cover that sin." You know, let's hear it. What sin have you committed that's so that the grace of the infinite merciful God of the universe just is unable to cover it.

    19:09-19:16

So this is the plan. Notice there's no plan B and there are no exclusions.

    19:20-19:30

You know, last month, being an election year, we voted, and I'm sure many people in this room voted.

    19:32-19:37

But by show of hands, how many people called the polling place and said, "You know what?

    19:39-19:40

Tuesday's not really good for me.

    19:42-19:43

Saturday night about seven is good for me.

    19:43-19:48

That's when I'm going to come and vote." Anybody like call and make that arrangement and make that happen?

    19:50-19:51

    Like you can't do that.

    19:51-19:52

    You can't do that.

    19:53-19:54

    Or how about this?

    19:56-20:02

After church, you get in your car and you, you're like, I need to stop and get gas.

    20:02-20:08

You pull into the gas station, and you're like, three and a half bucks, I think is still pretty expensive for gas.

    20:08-20:11

So you walk in and you say, I'm only paying a dollar a gallon today.

    20:12-20:13

    Anybody do that?

    20:16-20:17

    Anybody do that?

    20:17-20:18

    No?

    20:20-20:30

Then you take your family out to lunch and you take them to Red Lobster.

    20:33-20:34

And you're like, you know what?

    20:34-20:35

I just want a bacon cheeseburger.

    20:36-20:40

Like we don't have those here, but that's what I want, make it happen.

    20:43-20:44

You're like, "Well, Jeff, all these things are silly.

    20:45-20:47

"Obviously you can't just vote whenever you want.

    20:48-20:50

"Obviously you just can't name the price of gas "that you want.

    20:51-20:53

"You just can't walk into any restaurant "and order whatever you want.

    20:54-20:59

"Why do we think it's so silly "that we can't have all of these things on our terms?

    21:01-21:05

"But we don't think it's silly when we start demanding "that we come to God on our terms.

    21:06-21:07

    "Doesn't that seem silly?

    21:07-21:09

"God, I'm coming to you on my terms.

    21:10-21:14

"God, I know what you said about Jesus, but I'm with this higher power thing.

    21:14-21:16

I believe as long as we have a higher power, that's my thing.

    21:17-21:18

So God, you're just gonna have to accept that.

    21:21-21:23

Hello, he is God and I am not.

    21:26-21:30

And I would add, he is God and you are not.

    21:32-21:44

Or, you know, God, I appreciate what you did through Jesus, and now I'm going to work really hard and hope that I've earned enough merit, and I've said enough prayers, and I've done enough this, and you'll let me into heaven.

    21:44-21:47

Who do we think we are coming to God on our terms?

    21:47-21:58

When God has said, here's the terms, it's Jesus Christ, the perfect God-man who lived a sinless life and died a vicarious death and rose victorious to give us life.

    21:58-22:00

    God says, here's my terms.

    22:01-22:04

Whosoever believes in him will have eternal life.

    22:05-22:06

    God says, that's my terms.

    22:07-22:09

We come to God on his terms.

    22:12-23:07

So here we see one man's proclamation about Jesus. I'd just like to add before we move on, what you believe about Jesus Christ is the most important thing about you. Do you know that? I don't care where you work, I don't care who your family is, I don't care how much money you have or what kind of car you drive. The most important thing about you is what you believe about Jesus Christ. That isn't something that I made up. In fact, you remember Matthew chapter 16, Jesus was with his disciples and he said, "Who do people say that I am? What's Obviously, Jesus was getting a lot of attention.

    23:08-23:13

When you show up into a town and heal all the diseases, people tend to talk about you.

    23:13-23:28

He's like, "Well, who do people say that I am?" They're like, "Well, some people think you're like "Elijah back from the dead, or like John the Baptist, "or like one of the prophets from the Old Testament, "like resurrected, and like Jesus, you wouldn't believe it.

    23:28-23:34

"They got all kind of like weird ideas about who you are." But do you remember what Jesus asked next?

    23:36-23:43

He said, "But who do you say that I am?" And you see, that's the heart of the matter.

    23:45-23:53

Because at the end of the day, folks, it doesn't matter what CNN says about Jesus Christ, and it doesn't matter what Time Magazine says about Christ.

    23:55-24:00

When you stand before God, the issue is, what have you said about Christ?

    24:01-24:02

Who do you say that He is?

    24:03-24:11

You remember Peter's answer, he goes, "I believe that you're the Christ, "the Son of the living God." And Jesus affirmed his answer.

    24:11-24:12

He said, "Flesh and blood didn't reveal that to you.

    24:13-24:17

"That was a work of the Holy Spirit." Again, salvation is a work of the Holy Spirit.

    24:19-24:21

My question for you is, who do you say that he is?

    24:24-24:28

According to Simeon, he's God's plan of salvation.

    24:32-24:38

So secondly, this Jesus, God's line of separation.

    24:40-24:44

This is where the baby dedication really takes an unexpected turn.

    24:46-24:52

Look at verse 34, as Mary and Joseph marveled.

    24:55-24:57

I mean, you can totally imagine that, right?

    24:57-25:04

The stranger shows up and says, "Hey, your baby's the savior of the universe." You'd probably marvel at that.

    25:06-25:18

It says, "And Simeon blessed them "and said to Mary his mother." I get this scene, you know, Simeon makes his proclamation and you kind of see him leaning in and looking Mary in the eye.

    25:22-25:23

    This is really personal.

    25:24-25:25

    I gotta tell you something.

    25:30-25:40

What's he going to say? "This is the cutest baby I've ever seen." He takes after his father, which he did.

    25:42-26:06

Look at what Simeon says, "Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel." And actually, this is the first negative note in the book of Luke concerning the birth of Jesus Christ.

    26:07-26:21

Until now you've had peace, you've had hope, you've had joy, you've had a very calm and positive, affirming testimony.

    26:23-30:38

Here's a negative note. This child is appointed for the rise, I'm sorry, for the fall and rising of many in Israel. It was a shock in verse 32 to talk about Gentiles being saved. Here's a bigger shock. There are gonna be some Jews who were lost. Radical concept to many Jews. Because Jesus Christ is not only the plan of salvation, Jesus Christ is also the line of separation. Jesus Christ is the line of separation. That's what Simeon was saying here. This baby of yours, Mary? He's a line of demarcation, and he's going to separate two very clear and distinct camps. Understand, Simeon was saying, "Mary, when it comes to your son, there aren't going to be shades of gray. There's going to be black, and there's going to be white. There's going to be those who are for him and those are against him." What did Jesus say? "Whoever does not gather with me scatters." That's what Simeon was talking about here. But note that Jesus has always divided people. Jesus has always divided people. You're like, "Yeah, I'm gonna need some proof of that." Get ready. Isaiah 8 14, talking about the coming Messiah, "And of a fence and a rock of stumbling to both houses of Israel, a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem." John 7 12, at the Feast of Booths, says, "There was much muttering about Jesus among the people, while some said, 'He is a good man,' others said, 'No, he is leading the people astray.'" John 7 43, "So there was a division among the people over him." John 9 16, Jesus had just healed a blind man and some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God for he does not keep the Sabbath," but others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them. John 10 19, after Jesus talked about being the Good Shepherd, John comments, "There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. Jesus Christ divides people. Like, "Yeah, he sure did, didn't he?" No, he sure does. Listen to what Jesus said. You can jot these references down and look them up later, but this is in Matthew chapter 10. Listen to these words from Jesus. He said, "Do you not think that I've come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father and a daughter against her mother and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's enemies will be those of his own household." Don't raise your hand, but there are some people in this room, you have division in your family over Jesus Christ. There are some family members that don't want to talk to you because you're the religious nut. You're just a little too serious about Jesus. You're the Bible thumper. You're the holy roller, or worse terms that I wouldn't say up here. But there are people in this room that you're like, "Yeah, totally. I have family members that just flat-out hate me for no other reason than I go to church. I've talked to people that used this church that stopped because their family hated them so much just for coming and worshiping Jesus Christ. Causes division. It's not going to end.

    30:38-31:32

Actually, Jesus is going to divide people in the future. Matthew chapter 25, Jesus talks about his second coming and judgment. Jesus said he will separate people as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. But you have to see that Jesus Christ separates. Maybe you're sitting here this morning and saying, "You know what? I struggle so much. I have a brother who doesn't know the Lord, or I have an aunt who doesn't know the Lord. My mom doesn't know the Lord, and it's just so hard, it's just so hard. It is. It is. Simeon didn't offer words of comfort. He just simply said people are going to be divided over this child.

    31:36-32:17

One of the solutions, sadly, that the church has tried to do is to just be ecumenical. That'll stop the division. There are churches that want to stop the division over Christ. I was talking to the pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel in Philadelphia yesterday. He just called to catch up and I said, "What are you up to?" And he said that they actually had a prayer vigil for the families in in Connecticut from the tragedy last week, and a couple weeks ago rather, and he said that a couple of the pastors were just very, almost proud of it.

    32:18-32:21

They were sort of doing this little pastoral huddle before, like, what are we gonna talk about?

    32:21-32:22

    What are we gonna do?

    32:22-32:30

And he said this one pastor was just like, "I'm just gonna offer up this really ecumenical prayer, just really ecumenical prayer.

    32:32-32:33

And he was like so proud of that.

    32:33-32:52

And this other pastor, you know, when he spoke, he's like, "Yeah, we got, you know, we got Muslims here, and we got Hindus, and we got Christians, and we got Jews, and we got..." And Matt was telling me that over and over and over, he just kept talking about, "You know what we need to do right now?

    32:54-32:55

We need to believe in Christmas.

    32:57-32:59

We need to believe in Christmas.

    33:01-33:02

He's like, that was his sermon.

    33:03-33:07

He said he actually referenced the shepherds.

    33:07-33:09

And then like Matt said, you can actually hear it.

    33:09-33:12

He stopped himself before he said the name Jesus.

    33:12-33:13

He wouldn't even say the name Jesus.

    33:15-33:19

But his sermon was people at a time like this, we need to believe in Christmas.

    33:22-33:22

    Seriously.

    33:24-33:26

What gets people like that into ministry?

    33:27-33:34

Are there people, help me out, are there young people that are like, I just can't wait to get involved in ministry so I can tell people to believe in Christmas.

    33:35-33:39

Put all your faith in a day on a calendar that comes and goes every year.

    33:41-33:44

    It's sad, it is sad.

    33:45-33:49

Now here's somebody who's looked at as a representative of God.

    33:52-33:59

Instead of saying, believe in Jesus Christ, Believe in Christmas.

    34:04-34:22

Look, it's okay if there's a separation and there might be some people here that are like, "I need to stop going to that church because they talk about Jesus too much." Well, spoiler alert, it's not going to change because do you know who we're going to talk about next week? Take a guess.

    34:23-34:25

    Jesus! And you know what?

    34:26-34:30

Lord willing, for the world didn't end Friday, did you notice Mr. Nauer?

    34:32-34:34

I heard that whole Mayan thing was just about the Twinkies actually.

    34:37-34:45

But you know, Lord willing, if he doesn't come back and we're still here in a week, in a month, in a year, in 10 years, do you know what we're gonna be talking about?

    34:47-34:47

    Jesus.

    34:48-34:52

As long as God gives me breath to stand up here and open his book, I'm talking about Jesus.

    34:53-34:53

    Why?

    34:53-34:54

    Because he is salvation.

    34:58-35:06

So what's all the division about? This is the last thing today. What's all the division about? Well look again at verse 34 and 35 with me as we close.

    35:10-35:46

Simeon says, "Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising and many in Israel." Look at this phrase, "and for a sign that is opposed." We'll get back to that. He says, and this is parenthetically in my Bible, maybe it is in yours, he says, "And a sword will pierce through your own soul also, so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed." Let me just talk about this parenthetical statement for a second. Simeon, again, crazy baby dedication, right?

    35:46-36:01

Simeon says to Mary, "As a mother, it is going to be so painful for you emotionally and spiritually to raise this child." Why?

    36:03-36:11

But you remember Jesus when He was 12? Remember He was left behind and the caravan went ahead, and here's 12-year-old Jesus. What was He doing?

    36:13-36:14

    He's teaching the teachers.

    36:17-36:17

    Like, that's my boy.

    36:18-36:30

And his parents came back, "What were you doing?" "Didn't you know I had to be about my father's business?" So already there was...

    36:30-36:31

    This man was anointed.

    36:32-36:33

    This is the Messiah.

    36:33-36:36

And raising him isn't going to be like having any other kid.

    36:37-36:48

Even Jesus' first miracle in Cana, in John chapter 2, Jesus calls his mom "woman." Not in a derogatory way, but it wasn't an affectionate term.

    36:50-36:51

    It was just the separation.

    36:52-36:56

    It was...

    36:56-37:02

But ultimately, how piercing would it be for a mother?

    37:03-37:05

    John 19.25.

    37:06-37:20

You remember, Jesus was hanging on the cross, and all his big bad disciples, you remember them, the big bad fishermen, the rugged guys, the tough guys, where were they?

    37:21-37:27

One was there, but who was with Jesus while he was dying? His mom.

    37:29-37:43

So Simeon here was saying, "There's going to be a lot of heartache in your own soul over him." Sort of a personal message to Jesus' mother.

    37:46-37:55

But looking at the rest of this phrase, getting outside of these parentheses here, He says that Jesus is a sign that is opposed.

    37:55-37:58

Jesus will signify that which people hate.

    38:00-38:02

Jesus will signify that which people hate.

    38:03-38:06

The Old Testament promised it, the New Testament fulfilled it.

    38:07-38:10

Despised, rejected, He came to His own, His own did not receive Him.

    38:12-38:13

    John chapter 1.

    38:16-38:36

And then this last phrase, "So that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed." That word "thoughts" can also be translated "beliefs." This word in the Greek is actually used eight times in the New Testament, always negatively.

    38:37-38:39

    Always in a negative sense.

    38:40-38:42

You're like, "Well, what does it mean?" Here's what it means.

    38:43-38:52

In our vernacular, we would say, "Jesus brings up the filth." See, this is the opposition.

    38:54-39:00

Jesus Christ is righteous, and coming to Him means that He's going to expose your sin.

    39:03-39:05

That's what Simeon is talking about here.

    39:06-39:18

Jesus Christ will represent everything that's opposed, Every sinful, filthy thought and belief is going to be revealed in the face of this one.

    39:19-39:23

Because coming to Jesus means He's going to expose your sin.

    39:25-39:37

We don't have the time today to walk through the scripture on this, but look at every interaction Jesus had with people to get them to the point where they realize that they're a sinner who needs grace.

    39:41-39:42

That's the story that goes on.

    39:46-39:48

That's why people don't want to talk about Jesus.

    39:52-39:55

Because you know, you know that you've fallen short.

    39:57-40:02

You know by nature you're guilty of sin, you're guilty of rebellion.

    40:02-40:06

And that guilt makes you want to run from God, not run to God.

    40:13-40:16

But how you respond to Jesus Christ reveals your heart.

    40:17-40:19

And it boils down to as simple as this.

    40:20-40:24

Do you love God, or do you love your sin?

    40:25-40:26

Which one do you love more?

    40:29-40:37

By nature, I can stand up here and tell you, by nature, what I loved more was my sin.

    40:38-40:42

When I was involved in sin, I was miserable on one hand, yes, but on the other hand, I was loving it.

    40:44-40:53

But when I came to Christ, I realized, as many in this room have, Jesus exposes your sin.

    40:55-40:58

He says, "This isn't the way of God. This isn't the way of my kingdom.

    41:00-41:07

Repent from your sin, turn from your sin, and receive me." But how you respond to Jesus reveals your heart.

    41:07-41:10

Do you love God or do you love your sin?

    41:13-41:17

So we have tomorrow night a Christmas Eve service.

    41:20-41:28

And then, for some of us shortly thereafter, and for some of us in a couple months, we'll be packing away Christmas decorations.

    41:31-41:35

And that nativity scene is gonna go back in the box.

    41:38-41:43

And some of us might be a little sad about that because honestly, baby Jesus is comforting.

    41:45-41:47

    Baby Jesus is familiar.

    41:49-41:51

And baby Jesus doesn't seem like a threat.

    41:54-41:56

But Simeon laid it all out for us.

    41:58-42:03

This baby Jesus is God's salvation.

    42:06-42:11

This baby Jesus is the line of separation.

    42:14-42:19

And this baby Jesus is going to be the sign of opposition.

    42:20-42:21

Will you bow your heads with me, please?

    Worship, confession time.

    00:03-00:10

When I was growing up in the church that we grew up in, I didn't understand what the whole music thing was about.

    00:10-00:11

    I really didn't.

    00:13-00:30

I mean, you show up and you kind of sing this song that was written like 200 years ago, very poorly and out of key.

    00:30-00:34

And I'll be honest with you, I just, I didn't get it.

    00:34-00:35

    I didn't get it.

    00:35-00:36

    Why are we doing this?

    00:37-00:41

I'm not going to mention what church it was, lest anyone think I'm picking on a denomination.

    00:43-00:49

But let's just say that it was always open up your hymnal and we're singing the first, second and last verse.

    00:50-00:51

Now, how many people went to that church?

    00:51-00:53

We're just singing the first, second and last verse.

    00:54-00:55

That always made me feel bad.

    00:55-00:56

What was up with verse number three?

    00:57-00:59

Like, you know, I need to go back in some old hymnals.

    00:59-01:01

Were they like heretical or something?

    01:02-01:08

You know, like, you know, did they let a swear word slipped in in that verse or something like that?

    01:08-01:11

What was it against verse number three?

    01:12-01:13

    I just, I didn't get it.

    01:14-01:15

    Why are we singing?

    01:16-01:17

    Why are we singing?

    01:18-01:33

And I'll never forget, big brother already knows what I'm going to say, but we were singing this hymn this one day and the preacher in that church actually led the worship too, which doesn't happen here, say thank you.

    01:36-01:37

The preacher, I'm gonna give you another run at that.

    01:37-01:40

The preacher of this church doesn't lead worship here.

    01:40-01:41

    You're welcome.

    01:43-01:44

But at this church, the preacher did.

    01:45-01:49

So he'd get up with his hymnal and bless their hearts.

    01:49-01:51

There was a lady that sat behind us.

    01:52-01:54

    She was 117 years old.

    01:55-01:57

    If she was a day.

    01:57-02:01

And she wasn't the only one.

    02:01-02:06

Well, this particular hymn, it was the whole congregation was just sort of.

    02:11-02:28

♪ Oh gee ♪ Well, we got through about a verse and a half and the preacher, he goes, "Stop, stop, stop." He waves at the organist, "Stop playing, stop singing.

    02:29-02:38

"I'm not going to let you ruin another one." Which to this day is the most appalling thing I've ever heard in church.

    02:40-02:46

I'm not going to let you ruin another hymn.

    02:48-02:50

    Ouch, that was harsh.

    02:52-03:05

Well, then as an associate pastor, I went to this pastor's meeting and this one particular meeting, a bunch of local pastors were sitting around this table.

    03:05-03:10

This was, oh, I'd say about 12 years ago now, but a bunch of pastors were sitting around the table.

    03:11-03:12

And do you know what the discussion was?

    03:13-03:16

Every single pastor without exception, This was discussion.

    03:17-03:19

Why aren't people passionate in worship?

    03:22-03:26

Every pastor, there was that one pastor that was like, yeah, my people are really excited about worship.

    03:26-03:31

Every single pastor in this community, and there were probably 15 around the table.

    03:32-03:34

    Why aren't people passionate?

    03:34-03:39

And then the next guy was like, yeah, we sing and everybody's just kind of like, eh.

    03:40-03:42

And like, oh yeah, that's how it is at our church.

    03:42-03:49

We got the guy up there leading worship and everybody's just kind of sitting there with their arms folded, like what's everybody so excited about?

    03:52-03:54

Why aren't people passionate in worship?

    03:56-03:57

    Well, let's be honest.

    03:59-04:01

    Sometimes we aren't there, right?

    04:03-04:08

Sometimes we show up to church and the music is playing, but we're just not feeling it.

    04:08-04:09

    All right, confession time.

I show up to church, the music is playing, and I'm not feeling it.

    04:14-04:16

    Come on, confession time, seriously.

    04:17-04:20

Look, I've been there, all right?

    04:21-04:21

    I've been there.

    04:24-04:31

That I start to sing and I just, you know what, I'm just sort of mouthing the words, but my heart's just not in it today.

    04:32-04:33

    Why is that?

    04:34-04:35

    Well, jot this down.

    04:35-04:36

Here are five things that hinder worship.

    04:38-04:40

    Five things that hinder worship.

    04:40-04:41

Write this down in your outline.

    04:44-04:52

You know, for those times that you go to church and you're just like, now obviously there's something to be said for the quality of the musicians and things like that.

    04:55-05:00

And certainly there are things up on the platform that can be a distraction that hinder you from worship.

    05:00-05:03

But what I'm talking about is, what's going on in your heart?

    05:04-05:17

What I'm talking about is when you show up at a worship service and you see people with their arms raised and you see people with tears streaming down their face and you see people singing to the Lord, and you're just like, man, I'm just not getting it today.

    05:17-05:18

    Why is that?

    05:18-05:19

    Here's five reasons.

    05:19-05:21

    Number one is ignorance.

    05:22-05:25

Some people just don't know the Lord and they don't know why everyone is singing.

    05:26-05:28

That would explain most of my life.

    05:29-05:31

    But it's just ignorance.

    05:32-05:40

You know, if you don't know the Lord, it just makes sense that the singing time doesn't really hit you too hard.

    05:40-05:43

    Number two, pride, pride.

    05:46-05:53

That's when you're preoccupied with self and you walk into church and you're thinking, I'm pretty important, why aren't they singing about me?

    05:55-05:57

    Jesus had three songs today.

    05:58-05:59

    I didn't have any.

    06:00-06:01

    That's pride.

    06:02-06:10

But in any way, shape, or form, when you think that you're something, We studied this in Philippians 2, right?

    06:11-06:13

Consider others more significant than yourselves.

    06:13-06:18

Holding on to pride, humbling yourself before God in worship isn't on the table.

    06:19-06:20

    Number three is legalism.

    06:21-06:23

Here's a hindrance to worship, legalism.

    06:24-06:25

    I don't like this music.

    06:27-06:30

If Charles Wesley didn't write it, we shouldn't be singing it.

    06:33-06:35

    My preferences aren't being met.

    06:37-06:43

you realize that the beat of that song you were playing is satanic.

    06:46-06:48

There are people that say that kind of stuff.

    06:49-06:53

You know, when the Bible describes worship, two words, do you know what they are?

    06:54-06:57

Two words, new and loud, right?

    06:57-06:58

    Isn't that biblical worship?

    06:59-07:03

Sing to me a new song, a fresh expression of your faith.

    07:03-07:06

And for the people like, I thought the worship was loud.

    07:07-07:12

you're gonna have a hard time in heaven because they're not turning it down in heaven, okay?

    07:12-07:18

It is loud and it resonates off four corners that don't even exist.

    07:18-07:19

That's how loud the worship is in heaven.

    07:23-07:27

But when you come in legalism, I don't prefer this, I don't like this, this isn't my style.

    07:28-07:29

    No, you're not gonna worship.

    07:30-07:32

    Number four, worldliness.

    07:33-07:35

That's a hindrance to worship, worldliness.

    07:36-07:44

You know, I was drunk and stupid at the bar last night, and I was in an adulterous affair last night.

    07:44-07:49

Yeah, it's hard to roll out of bed and roll into church and worship.

    07:52-07:53

    What's gonna hinder that?

    07:54-07:56

And then the fifth one is unforgiveness.

    07:57-08:01

Unforgiveness, a bitter heart and being angry towards another person.

    08:02-08:02

    You can't worship.

    08:03-08:04

    You just, you know that.

    08:04-08:06

You know there's something in you.

    08:06-08:09

It's God's spirit convicting you is what it is.

    08:09-08:13

But when you're trying to worship and you know like, man, I still have hatred towards this person.

    08:14-08:15

    What did Jesus say?

    08:15-08:18

You know, if you're going to present your gift, you know, leave it there.

    08:18-08:20

Go be reconciled and then come back and worship.

    08:20-08:26

Jesus said the priority of the relationship actually takes the priority over engaging in worship.

    08:28-08:30

    Reminder, forgiven people do what?

    08:30-08:31

    You remember?

    08:31-08:33

    Forgive, yeah, forgiven people forgive.

    08:34-08:35

    Absolutely.

    08:36-08:37

Those are five hindrances to worship.

    08:38-08:42

And the ironic thing is this time of year, it can be even harder to worship.

    08:45-08:52

You're like, well, I don't understand because it's Christmas time and there's, you know, they put the lights up for us, which is really nice.

    08:52-08:54

And the red curtains are kind of Christmassy, I suppose.

    08:55-08:58

And it's Christmas, shouldn't worship be amped up?

    09:00-09:09

Well, for many people it is, but listen to this article written of the California Department of Mental Health, they actually issued this warning.

    09:10-09:19

"The Christmas season is marked by greater emotional stress, "more acts of violence than any other time of year." Did you know that?

    09:21-09:25

Greater emotional stress, more acts of violence than any other time of year.

    09:27-09:43

It goes on, "Christmas for many is an excuse to get drunk, to have a party, to get something, to give a little back, to leave work, to get out of school, to spend money, to overeat, and all other kind of excesses.

    09:46-09:51

And then we go to church, and we wonder why there's a disconnect.

    09:54-09:54

    Let's turn to God's Word.

    09:55-09:56

    Joyful surrender.

    09:56-10:01

I'd like to remind you last week, joyful surrender.

    10:01-11:08

the angel Gabriel had shown up to Mary and said, "Mary," you know, "here's this, you know, young teenage girl." Gabriel shows up and says, "Mary, God has His hand on you and you're having a baby, but you're not just having any baby. You're going to be giving birth to the King of Eternity, the King of the universe, the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. Well, then Mary went off to see Elizabeth. We see in verses 39 through 45. Now let me pause right here for a second. Why do you think Mary went to visit Elizabeth? Why do you think Mary went to visit Elizabeth? Is that like some hormonal thing, like, you know, when my wife was pregnant she was eating Big Macs like Tic Tacs, all right? But maybe for some women it's, now that I'm pregnant I just feel the need to travel. Lord, do you have any of that going on now?

    11:09-11:44

Well, obviously not. The reason Mary went to see Elizabeth, remember the conversation, she's like, "I've never been with a man, so how am I going to be pregnant and Gabriel says, "Oh, you remember your relative who used to be called Baron? She's pregnant, so God's like doing some stuff right now." So he's starting to see the connection. Elizabeth was like, "If there's one person on the planet that will believe me, that will understand the situation I'm going through, that I can really talk to, who's it gonna be? Tell me." Elizabeth, right?

    11:44-12:20

Another miraculous pregnancy. Mary's like, "She'll get it." So she went to see Elizabeth. It was a three or four day journey and she would have had a lot of time to think. And we're not going to look through these verses today, but do you remember what happens when Elizabeth and Mary get together? You remember what happens? John the Baptist, who was in Elizabeth's womb, actually jumped for joy at the arrival of Mary, and more importantly, who was to be born to Mary.

    12:22-12:27

Well, we saw last week in verse 29, Mary was greatly troubled.

    12:27-12:31

I mean, you can imagine, think back ladies being 13 years old.

    12:32-12:37

Imagine being 13 and an angel shows up and says, "By the way, you're giving birth to God in the flesh.

    12:38-12:47

Have a nice day." that sit with you? It'd be hard, wouldn't it? The Bible says she was greatly troubled.

    12:49-13:15

Well, now you see Mary's starting to get it. Like, God's doing something. God's doing something. Her doubts were gone, and now she's responding to the events, and her response to God is worship. Worship. Worship... Before we even get into the I want to leave you a couple things here to keep in the back of your mind as we go through this.

    13:15-13:29

But understand this, worship must be a natural response from your soul, an adoration, appreciation, and awe of God, who he is and what he's done.

    13:30-13:31

But worship has to be a natural thing.

    13:33-13:36

You know, I can't give you a pep talk to make you a better singer.

    13:38-13:42

You'll be a better worshiper if you just, it has to be natural.

    13:44-13:47

Worship's not just singing this song and pretending to be engaged.

    13:49-16:07

And you're like, "Well, I hear what you're saying, Jeff, but how can I come in here and passionately worship when I'm hurting and when I'm depressed and when the world's beating me down?" You know, I heard what you're saying about ignorance, pride, legalism, worldliness, and but what about, I'm hurting man, I'm just hurting. My heart's heavy, I've been depressed, you know, I've had some relationship problems. How do I worship when I'm stuck in hard circumstances, right? All right, quick vote, how many people would say that Mary was stuck in hard circumstances at this point? Young, betrothed girl, pregnant, and she's telling people that, "Yeah, the Holy Spirit conceived in me and I'm giving birth to the Messiah. Who's buying that yet?" It was a hard circumstance, but she shows us in this text how we can worship even in the hardest of circumstances. You ready? Are you ready? Okay. Yeah. You better be. Verse 46, number one, recognize God is bigger than my problems. Verse 46, and Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord." We're gonna pause here for a second. You have to recognize that God is bigger than my problems. As I just said, worship has to be a natural outpouring of your heart. Notice Mary says, "My soul, my soul." Real worship isn't just by doing something or by saying something. It's flowing out of the heart. It has to start in your soul. But notice Mary says, "My soul magnifies the Lord. What does that mean? Understand this, Mary was not making God bigger. Why not? Because God can't get any bigger, right? It's not like, "Oh God, you're so small, let me give you a leg up." And that's not what she was saying at all.

    16:10-16:16

Magnifying the Lord means we see him as he is and we regard his bigness.

    16:20-16:22

That's what it means to magnify the Lord.

    16:24-16:26

Do you think Mary's problems seemed huge to her?

    16:28-16:29

Do you think her problems seemed huge?

    16:30-16:33

Again, put yourself as much as you can in her situation.

    16:34-16:38

Thirteen, pregnant, the Holy Spirit conceived in me, I'm not married.

    16:38-16:43

I'm like, you know, a ways away from that. And now all of a sudden I'm pregnant.

    16:43-16:47

Would that seem like a huge problem? That would seem like an enormous problem.

    16:48-17:01

What's Joseph going to do? What's my family going to think? What are my friends gonna say? My whole world's crashing down right now. Her problems seemed huge.

    17:03-17:06

And sometimes when we face problems, how does God seem?

    17:08-17:10

Sometimes when we face problems, God seems so small.

    17:13-17:16

And sometimes we face problems, God seems so far away.

    17:20-17:23

When the truth is, God is huge and God is near.

    17:25-17:31

But, you know, it's hard to worship when you come in here focused on your problems, and I that happens every week.

    17:31-17:33

Sometimes we just can't help it.

    17:35-17:39

So let me ask you, what do you need in your life to be smaller?

    17:41-17:44

What problem in your life do you need to be smaller?

    17:48-17:50

For maybe someone here, it's a financial problem.

    17:50-17:51

Maybe you're like, you know what?

    17:51-17:53

I have this financial crisis right now.

    17:53-17:55

Oh, you know what, Pastor Jeff, I wish that was smaller.

    17:56-17:58

Yeah, I wish that was really small.

    17:59-18:01

Well, maybe for someone else it's a health problem.

    18:02-18:07

I know some people here that are dealing with health issues and have some family members dealing with health issues.

    18:07-18:09

They're like, "Oh, you know what, Pastor Jeff?

    18:09-18:12

"I wish that this health problem was just so small.

    18:13-18:17

"I wish it was a minor health problem." Or maybe for someone else there's a relationship thing.

    18:18-18:23

Like, "I had this big blowout with a family member "and I don't think they're ever gonna forgive me.

    18:25-18:32

"It's a huge problem, so how do I make it small?" How do you make those problems small, do you know?

    18:34-18:38

Take those problems, as huge as they look, and what do you do?

    18:38-18:40

    You set them beside God.

    18:41-18:42

That's what you do with those problems.

    18:43-18:44

    You set them beside God.

    18:44-18:46

You make much of the Lord.

    18:48-18:50

That's how you stare your problems down.

    18:51-18:52

    My soul magnifies the Lord.

    18:53-18:53

    Think about it.

    18:53-18:58

That little financial problem you're having, you're like, It's not little, Pastor Jeff.

    19:00-19:01

    What is it to God?

    19:04-19:05

Let me ask you, how much does God own?

    19:07-19:08

    How much does God own?

    19:10-19:11

    Everything, right?

    19:11-19:13

    God owns everything.

    19:14-19:17

Do you think God is, like, daunted by your financial problem?

    19:18-19:27

Like, "Phew, you know, I sure hope she doesn't pray about that, because my bank account can't cover that one." God's ever said that?

    19:27-19:28

    He owns everything.

    19:30-19:34

And hypothetically, if he ran out, he would just speak and make more, okay?

    19:35-19:36

    It's not gonna happen.

    19:38-19:38

    He owns everything.

    19:41-19:42

    You know, the health issue.

    19:44-19:52

All right, well, Pastor Jeff, you know, we're dealing with cancer, and we're dealing with, you know, some very serious health issues going on.

    19:52-19:54

What is that to God who created you?

    19:56-20:05

What is that to God who is going to give you a glorified, resurrected body someday, knowing that this body is going to wear out anyways?

    20:07-20:09

Does God have the power and the ability to heal?

    20:09-20:10

    Of course he does.

    20:11-20:13

    Your cancer doesn't scare God.

    20:17-20:19

You're like, well, what about this relationship blowup I had?

    20:20-20:22

God is in the business of healing relationships.

    20:27-20:28

And that brings us to the second point.

    20:28-20:33

Number one is, you know, recognize, here's how you worship God is bigger than my problems.

    20:33-20:38

You dragging your problems into church, put them beside God and now do a comparison.

    20:38-20:41

Your problem looks pretty small next to awesome God, doesn't it?

    20:45-20:45

    Recognize.

    20:45-20:46

    Number two, rejoice.

    20:46-20:48

God has saved me from my sin.

    20:49-21:03

Look at verse 47, Mary says, "And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." Mary calls God her what?

    21:06-21:08

    I'll give you a hint, it's in verse 47.

    21:09-21:11

Don't be shy about speaking out, come on.

    21:12-21:45

I'm going to give you another run at this, it's right there in verse 47, it's the last word and it begins with a capital S. This is really important. You ready? Mary calls God her Savior. Now why is that important? Because some people teach that Mary was sinless and she's like the, you know, the dispenser of the graces and uh-uh. Mary Mary was a phenomenal human being, but she was also someone who needed a Savior.

    21:48-21:51

So the question is, do you have a Savior?

    21:51-21:52

    Do you have a Savior?

    21:54-21:56

You're like, "Well, everybody has a Savior, right?

    21:57-21:58

    It's Jesus.

    21:58-22:06

Isn't Jesus the Savior of everyone?" Well, there's a difference between what everybody has and what some people have.

    22:07-22:12

For example, show of hands, how many people here have a family?

    22:14-22:15

    Okay, everybody, right?

    22:16-22:18

Everybody has a family or had a family.

    22:20-22:23

All right, how many people here have a cat?

    22:25-22:27

Oh, you're so ashamed of yourselves.

    22:27-22:27

    Come on, cat people.

    22:29-22:30

    Raise them high, cat people.

    22:31-22:31

    All right.

    22:34-22:38

Everybody has a family, but not everybody has a cat, right?

    22:38-22:39

    Or what about this?

    22:40-22:41

How many people here have hair?

    22:43-22:51

There's some guys that are like, "Well, not on my head anymore, but like on my back." Yeah, we all have hair.

    22:52-22:54

All right, now how many people here have a smartphone?

    22:56-22:57

    Raise them high.

    22:57-22:58

How many people here have a smartphone?

    22:58-22:59

    You people make me sick.

    23:03-23:14

I have this thing from Verizon that's a little more technologically advanced than the tin cans and wax string that I have to scream at people while I'm on the phone.

    23:16-23:21

Sometimes I've just, you know, sometimes when I've been on the phone with people, I'm like, you know what, let's just do this.

    23:22-23:27

Hang up your phone and open your window and I'll open my window and just scream at you.

    23:28-23:29

It's a lot better than this phone.

    23:29-23:32

I'm sorry, I'm not talking about the phone here.

    23:33-23:34

    I just couldn't help it.

    23:35-23:41

But the difference here, everybody has a family, not everybody has a cat, everybody has hair, but not everybody has a smartphone.

    23:42-23:43

    What's the point?

    23:43-23:47

Well, there are some things that everyone has, and there are some things that people choose to have.

    23:50-23:51

    And there is a difference.

    23:53-23:54

    Do you have a savior?

    23:58-24:05

Not everyone has a savior, but everyone is trusting something to get them to heaven.

    24:06-24:06

    That's true.

    24:08-24:35

Except I would say 99% because every time I've shared the gospel with people that have said, "I'm going to hell "and I know I'm going to hell and I don't care." I'm like, "Oh, so you're clueless." Other than that, the jokester, everyone is trusting something to get them into heaven, but the problem is everything isn't going to get you to heaven.

    24:38-24:43

You see, the Bible says that God is holy and God is just.

    24:45-24:54

Well, by nature, we are sinners and we are rebellious, but then the Bible says that God is loving.

    24:56-24:58

And for us, that looks like a dilemma, right?

    24:58-25:03

God says, "I'm holy and I always punish sin." Do you know that God always punishes sin?

    25:03-25:04

    He always does.

    25:06-25:10

God's not like grandpa that's like, "Oh, the kids are sinning again, but kids will be kids.

    25:10-25:17

"I'll just overlook it." God is a perfect judge and He always, always, always punishes sin.

    25:19-25:22

And what we deserve is eternal condemnation.

    25:22-25:23

    That's what we deserve.

    25:24-25:27

But you see, the other side of that is the Bible says that God is loving.

    25:29-25:31

And again, that looks like a dilemma to us, doesn't it?

    25:31-25:35

Well, wait a minute, He has to punish sin, but He loves us.

    25:36-25:38

So how are you going to figure that one out?

    25:42-25:49

Well, that's why everybody around here is just so excited about Christmas, because we're celebrating the way God answered the dilemma.

    25:52-25:59

He did that by becoming a man, Jesus Christ, to bear the weight of your sin.

    25:59-26:15

You know, there's a prophecy about Jesus in Isaiah 53, verse six, that says, "We all like sheep have gone astray, "each to his own way." You know, we all have sinned.

    26:16-26:21

Then he says, "Each to his own way." What that means is your sin tendency might be different than my sin tendency.

    26:22-27:38

You know, if you would do a poll of sin tendencies of people in this room, there are people in this room that would say, "My sin tendency is lust." Some would say, "Well, my sin tendency is gossip or lying or covetousness." It seems like people have different sin tendencies. That's why when you see somebody sin in a way that isn't your sin tendency, that just seems so weird to you. Like, why is he so attempted to do that? Well, because that's his sin tendency. We all like sheep have gone astray, each to his own way. That's the problem. But the second half of Isaiah 53 verse 6 says the solution, where it says that God has laid our iniquity, the iniquity of us all, on him, meaning the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. And here's what this means. Here's what this means. Let this hand represent me. We all like sheep have gone astray, each to his own ways, sinned. Instead of the Bible, let's pretend that this is a book recording every sin that I've ever committed. Okay?

    27:39-27:43

And I know what you're thinking. It would be a much larger book, and you're right.

    27:44-28:08

It would be a much larger book. It would be much larger and printed on like microfilm to write down every sinful word thought or deed that I've that I've had in my life or will have. Let this book represent the entirety of Jeff Miller's sin. When God sees me, what does he see? He sees my sin. He says, "You're guilty Jeff.

    28:08-29:19

you're guilty of all of this sin. That's the beauty of Isaiah 53 6 it says, "But the Lord has laid the iniquity of us all upon him." Let this hand represent Jesus Christ. God took my sin and put it on his Son. And you see when Jesus Christ was on the cross, what was he doing? He had my sin and he had your sin. He had the sin of everyone who eventually in all time would accept him and believe. He had the sin on himself. So imagine all of the sin on Jesus Christ on the cross and God poured out His wrath on my sin by pouring it out on His Son. So God took my sin and He laid it on His Son. So now when God sees me, what does He see? What does He see? Does He see any sin? When God looks at me, what He says is, "Oh, Jeff is sinless.

    29:19-29:22

    Why is Jeff considered sinless?

    29:22-29:26

Because God laid my sin on his son.

    29:28-29:30

Do you know how incredible that is?

    29:31-29:32

Because here's what some Christians do.

    29:33-29:38

Well, like, yeah, my sin's on Jesus, but there's a couple still on me that I'm going to answer for someday.

    29:39-29:39

    Wrong.

    29:40-29:43

Every sin has been laid on Jesus Christ.

    29:45-29:49

So that when God sees you, He sees you as being perfectly righteous.

    29:51-29:53

And when you stand before God someday.

    29:57-30:06

If you've received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God is going to welcome you into his eternal kingdom as a child, that's what you are.

    30:08-30:12

If you have not received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you still have.

    30:14-30:16

    Some things to answer for.

    30:18-30:21

And really what you have to answer for doesn't really have to do with your sin.

    30:21-30:23

Do you know what you have to answer for?

    30:24-30:30

Why didn't you receive the gift of salvation and eternal life that I've offered through my Son?

    30:31-30:32

That's what you have to answer for.

    30:33-30:41

God says, "I've given you a free gift and you rejected it." So now all this sin still carries the penalty, but who's going to carry it?

    30:42-30:43

    You are.

    30:44-30:45

    And that's why there's hell.

    30:47-30:49

Because God will not overlook sin.

    30:52-30:53

But you see, Mary knew God.

    30:55-30:56

Mary knew God as a Savior.

    30:58-30:59

So let me ask you, do you have a Savior?

    31:00-31:01

    Do you have a Savior?

    31:02-31:04

What are you trusting to get you to heaven?

    31:06-31:08

Who was I just talking to that just came to me?

    31:08-31:16

I was just talking to someone who was walking around the neighborhood in a city asking people, how do you get to heaven?

    31:18-31:21

He said not one person could tell him, not one person.

    31:24-31:25

Could tell him the right answer.

    31:25-31:26

    What is the right answer?

    31:27-31:28

    You have a savior?

    31:30-31:30

    There's only one.

    31:32-31:33

    There's only one.

    31:35-31:37

There's only one who bore your sin.

    31:38-31:39

There's only one who gives eternal life.

    31:39-31:41

You're not going to get it anywhere else.

    31:43-31:46

So rejoice, God has saved me from my sin.

    31:48-31:52

Number three, remember God has done great things for me.

    31:53-31:56

Remember, God has done great things for me.

    31:57-32:04

Look at verses 48 through 50, Mary goes on, "For he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

    32:04-32:08

For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed.

    32:09-32:40

"For he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation." Remember, God has done great things for me. First of all, look at verse 48. See what Mary's saying there? "He picked me." He has looked in the humble estate of his servant. That's very poetic way, Mary's saying, "He picked me.

    32:41-32:43

    "God picked me." That's awesome.

    32:44-32:47

Do you guys remember when you were kids and the teacher would pick you for something?

    32:48-32:48

    Do you remember that?

    32:49-32:51

That was such a big deal, wasn't it?

    32:51-32:52

    Do you remember that?

    32:52-32:53

Come on, how many people remember?

    32:53-32:55

I know some of us are further away from childhood than others.

    32:56-33:06

But how many of you remember, like, if the teacher would say, you know, "Laura, would you hold the flag "so that people can do the salute today?" Didn't you feel like the queen of the universe?

    33:06-33:11

"Oh my gosh, he called me to pick the flag." But we lose that.

    33:12-33:21

When we become adults, we're like, "Don't pick me." But when we're kids, we're like, "I got picked." And see, that's what Mary's saying here.

    33:22-33:41

"God picked me for this." God looked at, Mary's like, "I was just like this "know-nothing girl from a know-nothing town, "and God picked me for this." And then verse 49, I have this underlined in my Bible, and you better have it underlined in yours too because I'm checking.

    33:43-33:47

He who is mighty, I have underlined, has done great things for me.

    33:47-33:49

Has done great things for me.

    33:49-33:51

Has done great things for me.

    33:54-33:57

Remember, God has done great things for me.

    33:59-34:03

Romans 121, we're not going to turn there, but draw that reference on.

    34:03-34:15

121 teaches us that faith and gratitude are inseparable. Faith and gratitude are inseparable, meaning this, if you come up to me and you say, "Hey, you see that guy?

    34:16-34:51

He's got great faith." Then I'm going to say, "Well, then he must be very grateful to God." Or if you come up to me and say, "Hey, you see her? She is very grateful to God for everything." Then I would assume that she's someone of great faith. You too. And since worship flows from faith, I would suggest to you that worship and gratitude are inseparable. Did you make that connection with me? Faith and gratitude inseparable. Worship flows from faith. Worship and gratitude inseparable.

    34:53-35:03

If you're visiting with us, I know I've shared this with people before, but we have a box that Aaron calls the blessings box, but I call it the thank you God box.

    35:04-35:12

And every time God hits us with an unexpected blessing, we jot it down on a note card and just stick it in the box.

    35:14-35:22

And every year around Thanksgiving, we get the box out and just here's the way God has blessed us over the past year.

    35:23-35:25

Do you wanna know some ways that God has blessed us?

    35:25-35:25

    Do you wanna know?

    35:26-35:28

I'm gonna tell you anyways, whether you wanna know or not.

    35:30-35:31

What time do the Steelers play today?

    35:33-35:33

    Who cares, right?

    35:33-35:34

    They'll wait.

    35:36-35:37

Get Tomlin on the phone, tell him I ain't done yet.

    35:42-35:44

Let me tell you some awesome things that God has done.

    35:44-35:53

Do you know when my wife, talking about babies, you know when my wife was pregnant with Cade, the doctors told her to get an abortion or go blind?

    35:54-35:55

Those were her only two options.

    35:57-36:00

You can kill your child and save your eyesight where you can have the child and be blind.

    36:03-36:11

And you'll notice that my wife can see and we have Cade, both.

    36:11-36:13

    What's the explanation for that?

    36:14-36:15

Come on, somebody explain that one to me.

    36:16-36:18

God, that's the explanation for that, God.

    36:20-36:25

This same Cade, a couple of years ago, got kicked in the face by a horse.

    36:27-36:29

It was the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in my life.

    36:30-36:32

We were out at my in-laws and the horse was out of the barn.

    36:32-36:35

And I'm not talking like a pasture pony.

    36:35-36:39

We're talking a full-size horse that like the family rides on, okay?

    36:39-36:42

And Cage, this little kid, he runs up behind it.

    36:42-36:50

I was on the other side of the yard by the garage with my father-in-law, I know, and Cage running up behind his horse.

    36:50-36:59

And I just turned and said, "You don't think that horse will," and as soon as I said that, that horse kicked Cage right in the face catapulted him across the yard.

    36:59-37:04

He did a full flip in the air and landed how many feet away?

    37:05-37:06

    He was launched.

    37:10-37:12

    I thought he was dead.

    37:13-37:21

I ran down the hill to see my son laying there with blood coming out of his mouth and his eyes open but not moving.

    37:21-37:22

    I thought he was dead.

    37:27-37:28

    Not one broken bone.

    37:29-37:29

    Did you know that?

    37:30-37:33

We took him to the children's hospital, not one broken bone.

    37:33-37:34

He was in the trauma unit that night.

    37:35-37:39

He got out of bed the next day and started playing and singing and dancing like nothing happened.

    37:42-37:53

So somebody explain that one to me without using the phrase "God showed up." I could go on and I will.

    37:54-37:56

How about the launching of this church?

    37:56-37:57

That was a miracle, you remember that?

    37:58-37:58

    That was a miracle.

    37:59-38:05

How many times were we like, we don't have, we don't have, we don't have, and God provided, God provided, God provided.

    38:07-38:10

You're like, oh, Jeff, you're always talking about these things that happened like a long time ago.

    38:10-38:11

    Do you have anything recent?

    38:11-38:12

    Yeah, you want something recent?

    38:14-38:15

    How about a month ago?

    38:17-38:22

You know, sometimes we're like you, sometimes there's too much month at the end of the money, right?

    38:23-38:23

    Anybody else like that?

    38:23-38:24

That happens to us a lot.

    38:24-38:29

Like too much month at the end of the money and our kids needed shoes.

    38:30-38:35

And Aaron's just like, oh, you know, you know, Thunderfoot here needs new shoes.

    38:35-38:38

And we just, we don't have the money for shoes right now.

    38:38-38:44

We're just going to have to cram his fat foot into his shoes he has now or wear mine or something.

    38:48-38:49

    I went outside.

    38:50-38:52

to take the garbage out or something.

    38:54-39:12

Like right after Aaron and I had this conversation, I went outside, my neighbor across the street hollers over, "Hey, could your boys use some shoes?" Yeah, well, she gave us like several pairs of shoes and like what, three bags of clothes.

    39:14-40:18

Somebody explain that one to me without using the phrase, "Oh, God showed up." I could go on and on and tell you about all the unexpected blessings that God has given us and you would have a hard time believing it because quite frankly there are times I look back and I have a hard time believing it. But the point is this, I can stand here in front of you and I can say the Lord has been good to me. Can you say that? You can say that and I'm gonna give you an opportunity. You to three, I want you right now to think about all of the ways that God has blessed you. And I know typically we hang on to our problems. I want you to think all the ways that God has blessed you. And I want you to say, like Mary, like I just shared with you, I want you to share that testimony unto the Lord. I want you to say, "The Lord has been good to me." Are you ready? Let's hear it. One, two, three.

    40:21-40:42

Amen. Let's hear it again. You ready? Go. The Lord has been good to me. What has God done for you in the last week? What has God done for you in the last month? I'm sure there's somebody here that's like, "Nothing. God has done nothing for me in the last week." Well, that's never true.

    40:44-41:15

What is true is the fact that you just refuse to see it. And it's no wonder you have a hard time worshiping when you refuse to acknowledge God's personal goodness to you. So I would encourage you get a box. Get a box and write down things that is happening in your life that can only be explained by God. And Receive, God has satisfied me.

    41:19-41:22

Verses 51 through 55, "He has shown strength with His arm.

    41:22-41:25

He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

    41:27-41:39

He has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate." Here it is, "He has filled the hungry with good things and the rich He has sent away empty.

    41:41-41:49

He has helped us serve in Israel in remembrance of his mercy as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.

    41:51-41:55

And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.

    41:57-41:59

So receive, God has satisfied me.

    42:03-42:05

Again, proud people, Mary mentions proud people.

    42:05-42:06

    Proud people can't worship.

    42:07-42:11

They're too busy worshiping themselves to chime in with the worship of Jesus Christ.

    42:13-42:14

But you know what the real danger is with pride?

    42:17-42:21

Proud people never get what they think they deserve.

    42:23-42:25

Just make a mental note or even write that down.

    42:25-42:28

But proud people never get what they think they deserve.

    42:33-42:43

But you see, that's why Mary says, "He has filled the hungry with good things." That is, those who come and say, "God, it has to be you.

    42:44-42:45

    Only you can satisfy God.

    42:45-42:58

Only you can meet the real need, God." That's why Jesus said, "All who are thirsty, come and drink." Why would Jesus say that?

    42:59-43:00

    Because only He can satisfy.

    43:01-43:39

That's why Jesus told the woman at the well, "If you drink regular water, you're going thirsty again, right? But Jesus says, "If you drink from the water that I give you, it actually becomes a spring welling up inside of you." What was he saying? Jesus was saying that only he can satisfy. And you know, look at what people use to try to satisfy themselves. Alcohol, for example. What's the danger with that? When What road does that take you down?

    43:39-43:41

I need more and I need stronger.

    43:42-43:43

    And it never satisfies.

    43:44-43:46

Some people try to satisfy themselves with pornography.

    43:47-43:49

What's the problem with going down that road?

    43:49-43:51

I need more and I need stronger.

    43:51-43:52

    And it never satisfies.

    43:53-43:56

Some people try to satisfy themselves with drugs.

    43:56-43:57

What's the problem with going down that road?

    43:58-43:59

I need more and I need stronger.

    44:00-44:01

    And it never satisfies.

    44:03-44:06

Some people try to satisfy themselves with money and stuff.

    44:07-44:11

What's the problem with trying to find satisfaction in money and stuff?

    44:11-44:14

I need more, I need more, I need more, I need more.

    44:14-44:20

He who seeks to be satisfied with riches is never satisfied with riches.

    44:23-44:25

Addiction is actually a worship disorder.

    44:25-44:26

    Did you know that?

    44:26-44:31

And the devil keeps you hooked by making you crave more of something that is never enough.

    44:32-44:34

That's when the devil has you.

    44:35-44:42

When your eyes are off of Christ and you're craving something of this world, Satan is laughing his head off.

    44:42-44:46

He's like he's trying to find satisfaction in that, but it's never going to happen.

    44:47-44:48

But he's going to keep trying.

    44:51-44:56

The wrong things that I try to satisfy myself with always leave me hungry.

    44:58-45:04

That's why Jesus Christ is all you need, but you'll never know it until he's all you got.

    45:05-45:11

So the question is not, "Well, can God satisfy?" That's not the question.

    45:13-45:14

    Here's the question.

    45:14-45:17

Am I willing to seek satisfaction from Him?

    45:19-45:22

Am I willing to stop looking to these other things?

    45:22-45:28

Am I willing to stop looking towards substances and money and stuff and other people?

    45:29-45:43

Am I willing to stop looking at these things for satisfaction and invest myself fully in seeking fulfillment in my relationship with God because He has filled the hungry with good things.

    45:47-45:57

And when you are willing, you will be full and you will have joy and real worship as going to be natural.

    46:00-46:03

In just a moment, we're going to be receiving the Lord's Supper.

    46:08-46:10

And the Lord's Supper means so much, doesn't it?

    46:13-46:17

It's a remembrance of the price that was paid for our sin.

    46:17-46:20

It's a proclamation of the Lord's death until he returns.

    46:27-46:31

In just a moment, our ushers are going to be passing the communion trays.

    46:32-46:36

You do not have to be a member of Harvest Bible Chapel to take communion.

    46:38-46:40

What is the criteria for taking communion?

    46:40-46:48

If you are a born-again believer of Jesus Christ, he invites you to receive the Lord's Supper.

    46:50-46:53

And parents, I do not encourage young children to take communion.

    46:54-47:02

If you're not sure where your children are in their walk with the Lord, parents, I would use this as a teaching opportunity, but I would not encourage them to take communion.

    47:05-47:06

    This is so many things.

    47:07-47:10

This is a celebration of the outpouring of God's love.

    47:10-47:12

This is also an act of worship.

    47:16-47:17

    Joyful worship.

    47:19-47:28

Celebrating a God who, instead of holding our sins against us, essentially pour them out on Himself.

    47:32-47:38

So as we pass out these elements, I ask that you hold them, and we will receive the Lord's Supper together.

Joyful Surrender

Submitting to God makes me joyful, because:

  1. It makes me a recipient of God’s Grace. (Luke 1:26-30)

  2. It makes me a subject of God’s Sovereignty. (Luke 1:31-33)

  3. It makes me an agent of God’s Power. (Luke 1:34-38)

  • 00:00-00:07

One of the reasons we had a quiz was I wanted to show you that there are a lot of misconceptions about Christmas.

    00:09-00:09

    You know why?

    00:11-00:14

Because there are a lot of misconceptions about the Bible.

    00:19-00:28

And here's a misconception that I have to fight every week of my life.

    00:30-00:35

And if you're in any form of ministry, you're fighting this misconception too.

    00:35-00:36

    Here's the misconception.

    00:37-00:39

    Surrender is a bad thing.

    00:41-00:43

    Surrender is a bad thing.

    00:44-00:46

Let's think about surrender for a minute.

    00:47-01:34

thing or bad thing? Well, the church answer is, it's a good thing to surrender, but you know in your flesh, surrender often seems like a bad thing. Every single choice that you make is going to boil down to one of two categories. Am I going after my will or am I going after God's will? Every choice you make is one of those two categories. My will or God's will. Now tell me, which Which one's easier for you to want to do?

    01:36-01:37

    My will, right?

    01:38-01:38

    My will.

    01:44-01:54

But yielding, submitting, surrendering to God's will brings joy, and people don't want to buy that.

    01:56-02:26

People don't want… you mean to tell me that it's good to bend my will to the will of else? For me to tell myself no for the sake of doing something that somebody else wants doesn't sound like joy. Well, let's be clear, I'm not saying that you should give up joy for submission. I'm not saying that. Nor am I saying that you can add submission to your Your joy.

    02:29-02:31

    Here's what I am saying.

    02:33-02:36

There is no joy apart from submission.

    02:39-02:41

There is no joy apart from submission.

    02:42-02:42

    There's not.

    02:46-02:47

Are you in Luke chapter 1?

    02:49-02:53

I want you to look at the last verse first, the one that we're going to be looking at.

    02:54-03:11

Verse 38, we're going to be reading the account of the angel telling Mary what was about to take place concerning the incarnation.

    03:15-03:35

Look at verse 38, this was Mary's response to all of this, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord, let it be to me according to your word." I want you to see Mary's attitude through this.

    03:39-03:41

I'm the servant of the Lord.

    03:43-03:51

We're going to see in this account an angel basically shows up and says, "Hey, your life Life is taking a completely different track than you ever thought.

    03:55-03:57

Let's be honest, many people in our day, what would we do?

    03:57-04:13

We'd go to counseling, we'd cry, we'd withdraw, "It's not fair, it's not fair, I didn't want this, I didn't ask for this." Mary said, "I'm a servant of the Lord.

    04:16-04:28

Let it be to me according to your word." The short version of that is, Mary was like, "Okay, my life's taking a completely different track.

    04:28-04:32

Okay, we're going to go through these verses.

    04:32-04:40

We're going to pick up in verse 26." I can't put a spin on this story to make it any more awesome.

    04:42-04:42

    Seriously.

    04:42-04:48

Like, "Oh, it's Christmas and we're going through the Christmas story as preachers in all churches do every year.

    04:49-04:54

You know, Pastor Jeff, what spinner are you going to put on it this year?" I'm not going to put any spin on it because I can't make it any more awesome than it is.

    04:55-04:56

Here's what I'd encourage you to do.

    04:56-04:58

Let's go through this like the first time, okay?

    04:59-05:00

    Can we do that?

    05:01-05:06

Can we pretend like this is the first time we're actually reading this text and go at it in like such a fresh way?

    05:06-05:07

    Can we do that?

    05:07-05:08

    Can we try?

    05:10-05:10

    All right, let's try.

    05:11-05:11

    I'm going to try.

    05:11-05:12

You try with me, all right?

    05:14-05:19

Obviously, the last verse is sort of the thesis of the sermon.

    05:20-05:31

I have on your outline, "Submitting to God makes me joyful because, number one, it makes me a recipient of God's grace.

    05:32-06:10

It makes me a recipient of God's grace." verses 26 through 30, "In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.

    06:13-06:16

And he came to her and said, "Greetings, O favored one.

    06:16-06:25

The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at the saying and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.

    06:26-06:38

And the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.'" Let's look back through this.

    06:38-06:41

First of all, in the sixth month, the sixth month of what?

    06:42-06:46

Well, he's talking about the sixth month of Zechariah and Elizabeth's pregnancy.

    06:47-06:49

Elizabeth was a relative of Mary.

    06:51-07:03

Previously in Luke 1, he talked about how Elizabeth conceived and eventually she was going to give birth to John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ.

    07:05-07:12

So in the six months of Elizabeth's pregnancy, an angel shows up.

    07:13-07:14

Now, what was the angel's name?

    07:15-07:16

    Gabriel, right?

    07:17-07:18

And he is the messenger angel.

    07:19-07:24

It seems like when you see him in the Bible, he's like showing up to deliver the news, okay?

    07:26-07:33

Now, it says that he shows up to this city of Galilee named Nazareth.

    07:34-07:40

Now, you have to understand how significant this is, like to try to put it in context.

    07:41-07:47

Okay, so we're pretending we're reading this for the first time, but really we know what's coming, right?

    07:48-07:49

How many of you know what's coming?

    07:51-07:51

    Jesus.

    07:54-08:01

The most significant person to ever walk on the planet, God, is coming.

    08:01-08:03

So where does He show up?

    08:04-08:05

    Times Square, right?

    08:08-08:09

    Downtown Pittsburgh.

    08:13-08:15

    See, Nazareth, what is Nazareth?

    08:16-08:17

Here's what Nazareth is, I love this.

    08:18-08:24

Nazareth was this rural town of about 2,000 people that was about 70 miles north of Jerusalem.

    08:25-08:26

You know what I love about this?

    08:26-08:27

Do you know what Nazareth's like?

    08:28-08:29

Do you know what Nazareth's like?

    08:30-08:30

    Shakora.

    08:32-08:33

    Seriously.

    08:34-08:36

Now, how many of you know where Shakora is?

    08:38-08:41

Shakora is where I grew up, the mean streets of Shakora.

    08:43-08:44

It's where I cut my teeth.

    08:44-10:09

a man out of me, those mean streets of Shakurah. Obviously, if you know Shakurah, you know I'm joking. Shakurah doesn't even have a stoplight. Shakurah is a town of about 1,000 to 2,000, 60 miles north of the metropolitan area, Pittsburgh. So when you read this story, basically this is what you're seeing. God's like, "I'm going to do the most significant thing ever since creation and here's where I'm going to do it. I'm going to send my messenger to Shakurah." happening here. He waltzes into Nazareth to get this going. Several times in this passage we see "virgin," and some people say, "Well, that just means that, you know, their marriage wasn't fully legally finished." No, the word literally means "one who had no sexual relations." was betrothed to Joseph, and actually that was a legal contract. Did you know that? In our day, engagements happen, they break off, they happen, they break off, right? That's just sort of like, you know, you get a promise ring, you get a go steady ring, you get the class ring, and then you get the engagement ring, and if that doesn't work out, you just kind of, oh give me my ring back.

    10:09-10:13

And the betrothal was actually a legal contract.

    10:16-10:22

And it typically happened, get this, it typically happened when the girl was 12 or 13.

    10:24-10:27

Do we have any 12 or 13 year old girls sitting here?

    10:27-10:28

    Okay.

    10:30-10:32

All right, so here's our model.

    10:35-10:36

This is how old Mary would have been.

    10:40-10:45

I think sometimes we read the story and we get in our mind that Mary is this like, you know, twenty-nine year old woman.

    10:45-10:46

    She wasn't.

    10:49-10:51

She probably wasn't even barely a teenager.

    10:55-10:59

But also notice, not just what the Bible says, but what the Bible doesn't say.

    11:01-11:16

Verse 27 says, "The angel shows up, 'Okay, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary.'" I want you to notice that the only thing that's said about Mary is her name.

    11:18-11:19

    There's no commendation given.

    11:20-11:30

And I know in some religions she's venerated as being the dispenser of grace, and in this passage we see is she doesn't give grace, she's the recipient of grace.

    11:32-11:34

But she gets no word of commendation, none.

    11:36-11:45

No, you know, "Devout student of the Word named Mary," no, you know, "Holy prayer warrior Mary." It's like an angel shows up to who?

    11:46-11:47

    Just Mary.

    11:48-11:48

    Just Mary.

    11:51-11:52

    So what's the message?

    11:52-12:10

shows up and he says, "Greetings." That sounds so formal. Literally, what he said was, "Hello." Can you imagine, the angel walks in, and the angel walks into your front door and the first thing he says to you is, "Hi." That's what's happening here.

    12:11-12:19

"Hello, favored one." He says, "The Lord is with you. You found favor with God." And what was Mary's reaction?

    12:21-12:23

Somebody tell me, what was Mary's reaction?

    12:24-12:26

    She was greatly troubled.

    12:26-12:28

This is the only place in the Bible this phrase is used.

    12:29-12:32

So you can say she was troubled like no one else in the Bible.

    12:36-12:39

Again, can you like go at this for the first time and really try to think of what's happening?

    12:40-12:45

12 or 13 year old girl, an angel shows up.

    12:47-12:48

Can you put yourself in that place?

    12:48-12:54

An angel shows up and says, "Hello." God's got his hand on you.

    12:56-13:04

And she's like, "What?" And it says she was trying to discern, I love this, what type of greeting it was.

    13:07-13:08

    "What's that mean?

    13:10-13:11

    What's this even mean?

    13:15-13:16

    She was greatly troubled.

    13:18-13:24

While submitting to God, we know that's what Mary does, I want to camp here for a second.

    13:24-13:26

It makes me a recipient of God's grace.

    13:28-13:31

I want you to write this down on your outline.

    13:32-13:37

When we talk about grace, grace doesn't mean easy.

    13:40-13:42

    Grace doesn't mean easy.

    13:48-13:49

Do you know what followed this event?

    13:50-13:51

    Do you know?

    13:54-14:03

Joseph will misunderstand, and he's going to make a plan to divorce you quietly, which as you know didn't happen.

    14:04-14:08

But what's your fiancé going to think about this?

    14:10-14:18

Could you imagine showing up to your fiancé, think, "Oh, by the way, the Holy Spirit got me pregnant." That's what's happening here.

    14:19-14:20

I mean, what would you do?

    14:21-14:23

    Mary, you're crazy.

    14:24-14:26

    That's what crazy people say.

    14:28-14:29

    People are going to talk.

    14:31-14:33

Oh, by the way, here's what else is coming.

    14:33-14:35

Your son is going to be born in a feeding trough.

    14:41-14:54

You will have to flee to Egypt because Herod is going to kill all the male babies two years and younger because the top plan of the government is now to kill your child.

    14:56-15:02

Oh, and eventually when your son gets to be about 33, you're going to watch him be nailed to a cross.

    15:04-15:11

You're going to watch him hung to die publicly in the most humiliating and painful way possible.

    15:12-15:16

    Grace doesn't mean easy, okay?

    15:17-15:25

You know, we talk about God's grace, we sing about God's grace, and sometimes I think that we get in our minds, you know, when God gives us grace, that means things are going to be easy.

    15:26-15:27

    Mary wouldn't say that.

    15:29-15:33

You know, you're favored one, and you found favor with God, and the Lord is with you.

    15:33-15:36

That didn't mean life was about to get easy for Mary.

    15:36-15:40

That meant things were about to get really difficult.

    15:44-15:45

Let me ask you a question.

    15:48-15:49

    Did Mary have a choice?

    15:52-15:53

    What do you think?

    15:55-15:56

    Did Mary have a choice?

    15:59-16:00

    Paige says no.

    16:03-16:04

    What does everybody else think?

    16:06-16:08

You got guts because everybody's afraid to answer.

    16:09-16:13

But you're like, I'm answering and I'm committing to my answer, I respect that.

    16:14-16:15

So what do the rest of you think?

    16:16-16:18

    Did Mary have a choice?

    16:25-16:26

    Doesn't look like it.

    16:27-16:31

Look, I'm not getting into the whole Calvinism, Arminianism thing, you know how I feel about that.

    16:32-16:34

It's like, that stuff's up to God, all right?

    16:35-16:40

All I can say is when I read this, It doesn't look like Mary has much choice.

    16:41-16:49

The angel didn't show up and say, hey, you know what Mary, God was thinking about, oh by the way, it's like 60 degrees and we're talking about Christmas, isn't that crazy?

    16:52-16:54

Taylor's not here so nobody's gonna be offended if I take my jacket off.

    16:58-17:02

The angel didn't show up and say, hey God was thinking about doing this incarnation thing, would you be interested?

    17:05-17:09

He basically shows up and say, hey, God's going to do something Guess who he picked?

    17:10-17:11

    He picked you, Mary.

    17:15-17:16

    We'll jot this down.

    17:16-17:19

Sometimes God's grace looks like an invasion of your plans.

    17:22-17:23

    Did Mary have a choice?

    17:23-17:24

    Didn't she have a choice?

    17:26-17:28

I'm kind of with Paige on this one.

    17:28-17:29

    I lean towards no.

    17:29-17:31

It doesn't look like she did.

    17:33-17:42

You know, what it all boils down to ultimately is, at some point, she made the choice to be submissive to God.

    17:43-17:45

    And God used that.

    17:46-17:50

But sometimes God's grace looks like an invasion of your plans.

    17:53-17:55

You know, what's Mary thinking at this point?

    17:56-17:59

You know, I had plans for my life.

    17:59-18:01

You know, I'm supposed to get married to this guy, Joseph?

    18:01-18:06

He's like this stud, and I'm like really looking forward to getting married, and I'll probably help him out.

    18:06-18:10

He's a carpenter, and I just, I had these plans for my life.

    18:11-18:15

And God's like, yeah, I got plans for your life too.

    18:17-18:24

But no, no, no, I had all these dreams, and I had these things I wanted to accomplish, and God's like, yeah, I got some things I want to accomplish too.

    18:28-18:49

But getting away from Mary for a second, there's some people sitting here right now, that God's grace has shown up in your life in such a way that He's put you on a different track, a track that you weren't expecting, and a track that might feel like you didn't have a say in the matter.

    18:50-18:51

    Maybe it's a health issue.

    18:52-18:56

Maybe it is some sort of unexpected blessing that doesn't look like a blessing right now.

    18:59-19:19

So maybe you're saying, "You know what, I had plans for some things that I wanted to get done and now I can't do it because of this." When the other side of that coin is God is saying, "Now you're going to accomplish the purposes that I have for you." But I had my plans, I had my goals, I had my dreams.

    19:20-19:26

Well, my plans, my goals, and my dreams are all tainted by selfish motives and fleshly desires.

    19:29-19:38

Instead would I rather have God's goals, God's plans, holy, eternal purposes.

    19:42-19:44

I don't really want to get involved in the church.

    19:44-19:46

I don't want to be in a small group.

    19:46-19:50

I don't want to do a mission trip and God says, "Your plans have changed.

    19:52-19:59

I have a plan and it involves you." So get this out of your head that grace means things are going to be easy.

    19:59-20:02

Grace doesn't mean easy, but here's what grace does mean.

    20:05-20:12

Verse 28, "The Lord is with you." The Lord is with you.

    20:15-20:17

So you really have a couple of options here.

    20:21-21:05

You can fight your way through life without the Lord, or you can fight your way through life with the Lord? Which one are you going to go with? There is a sense in which you do have a choice. I don't know how people do it without the Lord, I just don't. I don't know how people hold it together without the Lord. I don't know how people hold it together mentally. I don't know how people When Jesus Christ isn't the center, when your will isn't pursuing His will, I don't know how people hold it together.

    21:09-21:11

Grace means that God is with you.

    21:12-21:14

See, that was really all that Mary needed to know, right?

    21:15-21:19

Yeah, things are about to get really hard, but God is with you.

    21:19-21:21

God never promised that hard times wouldn't come.

    21:21-21:25

The only thing that He's ever promised is when they come, He will be with us.

    21:25-21:26

You know, what's the 23rd Psalm?

    21:27-21:31

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.

    21:31-21:31

    Why?

    21:33-21:34

    Because you're with me.

    21:39-21:48

I'd also like to remind you, Proverbs 334, James 4, 6, 1 Peter 5, 5, all say the same thing.

    21:49-21:51

    God opposes the proud.

    21:54-21:56

But He gives something to the humble.

    21:56-21:57

    What does He give?

    21:59-21:59

    Grace.

    22:03-22:07

So the alternative to humbling yourself is squaring off against God.

    22:12-22:15

And you should want God's grace because you need God's grace.

    22:18-22:20

But understand that God is after more than just saving you.

    22:21-22:23

God isn't your ticket to heaven.

    22:23-22:24

    God's not your fire insurance.

    22:25-22:26

    He's after more than that.

    22:27-22:34

God wants to indwell you and change you and change your course and use you for His purposes.

    22:37-22:42

And even if it doesn't look like it at first, joy comes when God's grace arrives.

    22:42-22:47

So submitting to God makes me joyful, first of all, because it makes me a recipient of God's grace.

    22:47-22:51

Secondly, it makes me a subject of God's sovereignty.

    22:52-22:54

Makes me a subject of God's sovereignty.

    22:54-22:56

Look at verses 31 through 33.

    22:59-23:09

And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.

    23:14-23:34

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end." It makes me a subject of God's sovereignty.

    23:35-23:36

The news just gets more intense.

    23:36-23:39

Okay, so the angel shows up and he's like, "Hi, Mary.

    23:40-23:40

    God's with you.

    23:42-24:09

found favor in God's eyes. What's that mean? Here's what it means. Think about this phrase, "You will conceive in your womb." He didn't say, "You and Joseph." That would have made sense, like, "Oh yeah, someday, yeah, yeah, someday we talked about having kids, so that makes sense. Yeah, yeah, Joseph and I are gonna have Yeah, that makes sense.

    24:10-24:10

    He didn't say that.

    24:10-24:21

He goes, "Hey Mary, you're going to conceive." Does that like strike anybody else as being like hit the floor crazy?

    24:21-24:25

Like an angel shows up and says, "By the way, you're gonna have a baby." What?

    24:30-24:31

    But not just a baby.

    24:35-24:37

Look at what the angel says about the baby.

    24:39-24:40

    Look back at verse 31.

    24:45-24:46

You will call His name Jesus.

    24:47-24:50

Okay, so we've got the name down, don't have to argue about that.

    24:52-24:59

Verse 32, "He will be," first of all, "He will be great, and He will be called the Son of the Most High.

    25:03-25:15

And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Write this reference down.

    25:16-25:19

We're not going to turn to it now, but write down 2 Samuel 7.

    25:21-25:22

    Second Samuel 7.

    25:24-25:25

You need to know that passage.

    25:25-25:29

That's a very important passage in your Bible, 2 Samuel 7.

    25:29-25:54

You're like, "Why is that so important?" Because back in the Old Testament, God actually told David, who was the king, he said, "David, you're always going to have someone on the throne." God made a promise to David, "Your lineage, your family line, you are always going to have someone on the throne." Now Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of that, you understand?

    25:55-26:01

was Jesus' legal father, and Joseph was from the line of David.

    26:04-26:09

Actually there are around 350 predictions in the Old Testament about the first coming of Jesus Christ.

    26:10-26:14

And basically what this angel was saying, "You know all those promises, Mary?

    26:14-26:15

You know all those promises in the Old Testament?

    26:16-26:25

Well this is the fulfillment of that." You know there's a word that we use here a lot, that you'll hear me throw around, and It's the word sovereignty.

    26:25-26:26

Do you know what that word means?

    26:28-26:29

Do you know what the word sovereignty means?

    26:31-26:32

Go ahead and shout it out if you know.

    26:35-26:37

    What's the word sovereignty mean?

    26:39-26:41

You mean we've been using this word and nobody knows what it means?

    26:42-26:43

    I'm so embarrassed right now.

    26:44-26:46

    What does sovereignty mean?

    26:49-26:51

Yeah, you're in charge and you do what you want.

    26:51-26:52

That's a good way of putting it.

    26:53-27:02

It actually comes from two words, which literally is "solely reigns." There's only one person that can be said of.

    27:02-27:04

Who is it that solely reigns?

    27:04-27:05

    It's God Himself, right?

    27:07-27:10

When we say that God solely reigns, what that means is He doesn't have a committee.

    27:11-27:12

    God doesn't have a meeting.

    27:13-27:15

He's like, "Yeah, I was thinking about doing some stuff.

    27:15-27:18

What do you guys think about that?" "Well, God, we would advise against that.

    27:18-27:24

We're entering into a bad fiscal quarter." And God's like, "Oh, okay, well then, thank you for that.

    27:24-27:31

I guess we'll hold off on our plans." When we talk about, and when the Bible talks about God's solely reigns, we talk about His sovereignty.

    27:32-27:37

What that means is God is in complete control of every single thing that happens.

    27:38-27:42

There's not one time anything happens that's outside of God's control.

    27:42-27:45

God's never said, "Whoops." Did you know that?

    27:46-27:52

God's never been like, "Oh, I'm doing this revival here in Africa, and then something happens over here in the United States.

    27:52-27:57

Well, how did I miss that?" God never misses a step.

    28:02-28:08

In fact, Jesus said, "God knows how many hairs you have in your head." And for some, that's a lot less counting than for others.

    28:12-28:24

But the point is this, God is absolutely in control, solely reigning over everything, and when's His term up, by the way?

    28:24-28:25

    When's God's term up?

    28:26-28:26

    Never.

    28:30-28:53

That's why when we studied Philippians 2 a couple of weeks ago, remember, "Every knee will bow and every tongue will confess," Philippians 2, verses 10 and 11, that Jesus Christ is Lord. Look at this promise. Mary, you're going to have a child and you're going to call him Jesus, and he's going to be the king of everything forever. Awesome.

    28:54-31:17

Awesome. God solely reigns. Somebody told me -- I can't remember who told me this story, so if it was you, please remind me. But about an elementary school class was having a mock election, you know, getting the kids involved and interested in the politics and what was happening, and this one little girl didn't vote. And the teacher said, "Well, you know, you need to vote. You need to pick who you want to vote for." And the little girl says, "I want to see who wins, and I want to vote for that person, right? Like I want to know who wins, almost like well if I vote for the person that doesn't win then then I lose like it's a big game. Well I'm going to tell you right now who's going to win. And I'm not talking about a political election, I'm talking about the sovereign of the universe. Here's my encouragement for you no matter how bad things get, no matter the pain you experience here and now, no matter how much I struggle with discouragement and disappointment, my best days are ahead of me. So, surrender is making yourself a subject of God's sovereignty. You know the day is coming when Christ returns and he's going to establish a thousand-year reign on this earth to show what life was meant to be like before ushering in the final state of things. One of my most favorite verses in the whole Bible, Revelation 21 5, when Jesus said, "Behold, I am making all things new." So surrendering to God is to be subject to the Creator who loves, the Creator who redeems, and the Creator who will ultimately restore all things. That's my hope and that's my allegiance And that is my joy.

    31:20-31:22

So you are subject of God's sovereignty.

    31:25-31:26

That was the whole announcement here from the angel.

    31:28-31:34

You're going to give birth to the one who's going to be the king of everything forever.

    31:37-31:40

Well, finally, it makes me an agent of God's power.

    31:42-31:44

It makes me an agent of God's power.

    31:48-31:57

Okay so, the angel shows up to this young woman and says, "You're going to have a baby and your baby's going to be the king of everything forever.

    31:57-31:59

Now pretend you're that young woman.

    31:59-32:08

What's the first question you'd ask?" "How?" "Yeah, like, exactly.

    32:10-32:11

    How's that gonna happen?

    32:12-32:22

Like look, mom and dad had the birds and the bees talk with me, and I'm not saying I'm like the expert, but I do know that it requires two people.

    32:24-32:25

    Right?

    32:25-32:26

    Like I know that part.

    32:26-32:28

So, and that's exactly what Mary said.

    32:28-32:29

    You see verse 34?

    32:29-32:46

Mary said to the angel, "How will this be "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

    32:48-32:52

Therefore the child to be born will be called Holy, the Son of God.

    32:52-33:03

And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

    33:05-33:07

nothing will be impossible with God.

    33:10-33:13

And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord.

    33:14-33:18

Let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

    33:19-33:20

Makes me an angel of God's power.

    33:23-33:26

So Mary's question, I would say logical, right?

    33:26-33:28

Would you put Mary's question in the logical category?

    33:31-33:33

So let me ask you, is it okay to ask God questions?

    33:33-33:34

    Is it okay?

    33:36-33:37

Is it okay to ask God questions?

    33:39-33:41

Some people are like, "Don't question God.

    33:41-33:47

Let me ask parents." Parents, is there a difference between asking and questioning?

    33:48-33:48

    Is there a difference?

    33:50-33:52

    There certainly is, isn't there?

    33:52-33:55

In fact, you know, Jesus commanded us to ask, didn't he?

    33:56-33:58

    Ask, seek, and knock, right?

    33:59-34:02

But isn't there a difference between asking and questioning?

    34:03-34:06

God has zero time for questioning, by the way.

    34:07-34:09

Questioning, what's the difference between asking and questioning?

    34:10-34:10

    What's the difference?

    34:12-34:13

The difference is attitude, isn't it?

    34:16-34:20

You know, parents, your child comes up to you, it's like, "Dad, what are you doing that for?

    34:21-34:32

"What are you doing that for?" Versus, "Hey, Dad, can you tell me "why you decided to do that?

    34:32-34:33

    Is there a difference?

    34:35-34:36

It's in the attitude, isn't there?

    34:38-34:53

So Mary to the angel, "What did you do that for?" Mary was saying, "Well, I'm just not understanding how this is going to work." It's okay to question God when you have the right attitude.

    34:55-34:57

Asking God, not questioning God, I should say.

    34:59-35:00

    So what's the answer?

    35:00-35:13

Well, he says, "Well, the Holy Spirit's going to come upon you," and he says, "The power of the Most High will overshadow you." That's a picture from the Old Testament, God's presence overshadowing the tabernacle.

    35:16-35:30

And he says, "This child will be called holy, the Son of God." So basically what the angel was saying was, "God's going to make this happen, and you're You're going to be an agent of God's power.

    35:32-35:32

    Do you see that?

    35:34-35:38

For a woman that's never been with a man to have a baby, something's going to have to happen.

    35:38-35:39

It's going to be a miracle.

    35:42-35:45

And really the answer's in verse 37, right?

    35:45-35:47

For nothing will be impossible with God.

    35:52-35:57

For example, previous verse, here's a little case study for you, Mary.

    35:58-35:59

    You know your relative Elizabeth?

    36:02-36:06

You need to underline this in your Bible, circle it, highlight it, whatever you do.

    36:07-36:23

End of verse 36, okay, the angel says, "Your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren." Underline who was called barren.

    36:25-36:25

    Isn't that awesome?

    36:30-36:31

Mary's like, "Well, Elizabeth can't have kids.

    36:31-36:36

She's barren." "Yeah, your relative Elizabeth, she's expecting.

    36:36-36:37

She's six months pregnant." "Well, that can't be.

    36:39-36:47

Elizabeth can't be pregnant because she's barren." Notice Gabriel says that's what she was called.

    36:48-36:49

    She was called barren.

    36:50-36:53

But when God shows up, everything changes.

    36:57-37:01

When God shows up, everything changes.

    37:05-37:07

I don't care what you were called.

    37:10-37:12

Listen, let's get away from this story.

    37:12-37:15

Let's put the "What's God's story?" right here, right now.

    37:15-37:17

I want to talk about you for a second.

    37:17-37:30

I don't care what you were called, addict, loser, failure, weak.

    37:32-37:46

You know, some people cripple themselves in life because they take an identity that was put on them and carry it with them and refuse to let it go.

    37:50-37:52

Well, you know, I'm never going to amount to anything because I'm an addict.

    37:54-38:01

I can't… I'm not really going to have much of an opportunity in life because I'm an addict.

    38:03-38:05

And God shows up, He's like, "No, you're not.

    38:06-38:07

    That's who you were.

    38:08-38:09

    That's not who you are.

    38:11-38:13

You have a new identity in Jesus Christ.

    38:16-38:18

    That's what Elizabeth experienced.

    38:19-38:19

    God shows up.

    38:19-38:21

    God changes your identity.

    38:25-38:30

Yeah, Elizabeth, yeah, she was called barren, but do you know why she's not called barren anymore?

    38:31-38:34

Because she's six months pregnant, right?

    38:34-38:36

You don't call a six-month pregnant woman barren.

    38:37-38:39

Kind of a contradiction of terms.

    38:45-38:47

So nothing is impossible with God.

    38:49-38:51

    So God had this plan.

    38:53-38:53

    Right?

    38:54-38:56

God had this plan, and this was God's plan.

    38:58-39:03

Though people have rebelled against me, I'm going to save people from their sin.

    39:03-39:05

I'm going to give people eternal life.

    39:05-39:19

I'm going to forgive and restore people to myself." God's plan isn't a procedure, or a process, or a program.

    39:21-39:33

Everything about God's plan revolves around one person, and that person is Jesus Christ.

    39:35-39:38

Think about the miracle of Jesus Christ here.

    39:40-40:42

The God of the universe who spoke everything to existence chose a point in time that He was going to become a human being, to dwell among humans, to teach about eternal spiritual matters ultimately to lay down His life on a cross and die, to raise from the dead, to ascend back into heaven, that whosoever would call on His name, receive Him, believe that His death and resurrection accomplished what He said it accomplished, to be able to appropriate that by faith, anytime, anyplace, any people, the universal cure for the universal problem for those who will believe.

    40:45-40:46

And how did this all start?

    40:48-40:54

It all started with a young woman who was surrendered to God.

    40:57-40:58

I want to leave you with this.

    41:03-41:07

Mary wasn't great because of her wisdom.

    41:08-41:09

    The Bible doesn't say that.

    41:09-41:10

    I'm sure she was wise.

    41:11-41:13

I'm sure she knew the Old Testament better than I do.

    41:14-41:16

That's not what made her great.

    41:17-41:19

Mary wasn't great because of her family.

    41:20-41:26

I don't know anything the Bible says about her parents or any other family members really aside from Elizabeth.

    41:30-41:32

Mary wasn't great because of her talents.

    41:32-41:34

I don't even know if she had any talents.

    41:34-41:38

I'm sure she did, but the Bible doesn't talk about her being like a banjo player or anything.

    41:40-41:43

Mary didn't have this like fantastic social network.

    41:44-41:46

Like she was the prom queen.

    41:50-41:52

Mary didn't have even a lot of life experience.

    41:53-42:04

She wasn't like this grizzled, you know, haggard old lady that had all these life experiences that could sit down and say, "Well, I've been through a lot, Sonny." She was like adolescent.

    42:06-42:08

So what made Mary so great?

    42:11-42:12

    Please leave with this.

    42:12-42:14

There was one thing that made Mary great.

    42:14-42:15

Did you see what it was?

    42:17-42:19

    She was surrendered to God.

    42:22-42:28

Verse 38 is the only thing really that I can see biblically that made Mary great.

    42:30-42:32

As Mary said, "I'm the servant of the Lord.

    42:33-42:37

"Let it be to me according to your word." That's what made her great.

    42:39-42:42

You're like, "Oh, I know where you're going with this." Yeah, the same applies to you.

    42:45-42:46

    You wanna be great?

    42:50-42:59

Well, your wisdom and your family and your talents and your social network and your experience will not amount to anything.

    43:00-43:04

You only have one shot at greatness in this life.

    43:04-43:06

You have one shot at greatness.

    43:08-43:17

You have one shot at experiencing true joy in this life, and the only way that's going to happen is if you surrender yourself to God.

    43:19-43:27

Then like Mary, you're going to experience His power, accomplishing His purposes through you.

    43:28-43:30

Are you going to give birth to a Messiah?

    43:31-43:32

    Probably not.

    43:33-43:34

That was sort of a one-time thing.

    43:38-43:47

But is God going to manifest His power upon you and through you to accomplish things that only He can accomplish?

    43:48-43:50

    Yeah, He will.

    43:53-43:58

But what that requires is for you to be surrendered to God.

    44:02-44:13

surrender, we've been talking about it the whole passage, and this week as I was working through this, one of the questions that I was going through is, "How can I illustrate surrender?

    44:15-44:23

How can I illustrate that?" What I thought was, I want to close the sermon with like a really graphic illustration of surrender.

    44:27-44:40

I even thought about calling Aaron Bloomingdale up and like, "Bring some of your weaponry and I'll put it on and then take it off and show like I'm surrendering things," but we didn't go that route.

    44:42-45:47

It kept going through my mind, "What does surrender look like?" Here's a bunch of people that, you know, you guys love God's Word, you want to do what God's called you to do, and as a preacher so bad I want to be like, "This is what surrender looks like." Maybe you're asking, "Well, how much do I have to give up to be surrendered? How much of my sin do I have to give up to be surrendered to Christ? A pornography addiction, a drug addiction, an alcohol addiction, how much of that do I have to give up to be surrendered? Can I give up, you know, can I cut my addictions down by like half and still be considered totally surrendered? How much of my stuff do I have to surrender unto God in order to be considered completely surrendered? Like what about like if I give God 5% or 10%? What if I gave 20%? That's like a double-tithe. Would that be considered being fully surrendered?

    45:50-45:51

    What about my will?

    45:53-45:54

My goals, my dreams, my plans?

    45:55-46:12

What if like I commit to like helping at the church, but just as long as it doesn't really cut into my week too much, and it's not going to, you know, take me out of my comfort zone too much, and what if I just make a little tiny commitment?

    46:15-46:16

Is that a picture of being fully surrendered?

    46:19-46:36

You know, it's funny as I thought and I thought and I thought, "What does surrender look like?" And then I thought, "I'm such an idiot," because God's already given the perfect picture of surrender, hasn't He?

    46:40-46:53

In fact, when you come to Jesus Christ and receive Him as your Lord and Savior, one of the first things you should do as a believer is live out this picture of surrender.

    46:54-46:56

    It's baptism, right?

    46:57-46:58

    That's the picture of surrender.

    47:02-47:06

Because if you're a follower of Christ and you've been baptized, I'd like to remind you what that meant.

    47:07-47:15

What that meant was I'm considering myself dead and buried.

    47:17-47:23

And coming up out of the water, I'm identifying with the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    47:26-47:29

So now the life that I live really is Him living in me and through me.

    47:32-47:33

    That's the picture of surrender.

    47:38-47:54

So what a better way to close a message on surrender than by looking at a video where three guys from this congregation made that decision, fully surrendered to Jesus Christ.

    47:54-47:55
