Open your Bibles to Colossians Chapter 3.

    00:16-00:19

We're going to be picking up in verse 12 today.

    00:23-00:31

The title of this message is "Signs of Life." I've been doing some reading this week.

    00:32-00:35

I've just been so excited to tell you some of these things. Are you ready?

    00:40-00:42

Dramatic pause. That's what that was.

    00:43-00:45

    Alright. As you know...

    00:49-00:52

Scientists think they might have found signs of life on Mars.

    00:55-01:02

And all God's people said, "Ooooh!" Try it again. You know that they think they found signs of life on Mars?

    01:03-01:05

"Ooooh!" That's what I said, right?

    01:06-01:10

Well, I was trying to do some digging to get something specific about this.

    01:10-01:11

    Here's what they found.

    01:12-01:18

They found methane signatures and possible biological activity hidden in caves.

    01:23-01:40

I read another website that said, "Well, sure, there's building blocks for life on Mars because we found underground microbial ecosystems." I don't even know what that means to be honest with you. I'm just throwing that out there like I do.

    01:40-01:44

They also said you found organic materials in mud volcanoes.

    01:46-02:00

But not to worry, we're going to get some clarification on this because last November, the Atlas V rocket carried a rover to see if we could find some life on Mars.

    02:01-02:07

This project was a 10-year, $2.5 billion project.

    02:10-02:17

Okay, so young people, if your parents ever tell you that you're wasting money, I want you to remember this.

    02:18-02:30

The government spent 2.5 billion dollars to send a rover thinking that we're going to find life on Mars.

    02:31-02:43

It's always interesting what they do find and how they say, "That's not life." Well, I can tell that that really didn't excite you as much as it did me, so I'm going to take another rub at something else here.

    02:43-02:47

I was looking up, what are some signs of life on the earth?

    02:48-02:49

    Alright?

    02:50-02:54

Remember Mrs. Gren, G-R-E-N, it's like an acrostic, right?

    02:55-02:59

Mrs. Gren, here's the seven signs of life.

    03:00-03:02

Here's how you know if you're alive.

    03:02-03:06

So I'm going to give you this list and I want you to look at the person next to you and see if they're alive.

    03:07-03:15

Okay? Movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, and nutrition.

    03:15-03:21

On second thought, not all of those are going to be happy to be doing the shirt service.

    03:22-03:26

I hope. Those are signs of life.

    03:29-03:31

So how do you know if there's life?

    03:32-03:36

Well, Mars we have microbial systems, and our Mercury has this red.

    03:36-03:56

I was reading these things and I thought, "How do we know if something's alive?" Well, actually I went back to my childhood, and I remember there was this song when I was a kid that really put a lot of it into perspective for me.

    03:59-04:01

And maybe it will for you too.

    04:03-04:04

    Maybe this will educate you.

    04:04-04:05

    Show that video to Sammy.

    04:37-05:16

Alive And you're alive, yeah, yeah, yeah You're alive Breathe in, breathe out Breathe in, breathe out Well, a rock's not alive And a crack's not alive A telephone's not alive An ice cream cone's not alive And don't breathe on it or grow old And that is how you know You don't know, I'm alive, alive, alive Okay, you want to watch the rest of this?

    05:16-05:36

Or can you just leave it The ice cream cone is not alive.

    05:36-05:37

It's what we learned this morning.

    05:38-05:39

    Please don't take it out.

    05:39-05:43

Because these are all signs of life.

    05:43-05:52

But you know, whether it's on Mars, or whether it's on one of my other favorite places, Sesame Street, I'm not really concerned about signs of life there.

    05:54-05:58

Actually, what I'm most concerned about are signs of life here.

    06:00-06:00

    In the church.

    06:02-06:05

I'm most concerned about signs of life in you.

    06:05-06:06

What do you mean by that?

    06:07-06:10

We've been studying this for the last years, over and over.

    06:10-06:15

We've seen that we were dead in our sins.

    06:16-06:17

And what did Paul tell us?

    06:18-06:20

    We've been, what? Made alive.

    06:21-06:22

    In Christ.

    06:22-06:28

We've identified with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    06:28-06:33

and it's being alive in Christ, that's the thing that transforms us.

    06:33-06:35

So the question is, have you been born again?

    06:37-06:43

And if you've been born again, you will have the signs of life.

    06:46-07:00

In our kids' report, we had a lot of people say, "Well, I bet your house is really different." "Oh, but the baby is..." "I haven't noticed. Nothing's changed." Obviously that's a joke, but there's always evidence when there's life, right?

    07:01-07:02

    Life is self-evident.

    07:06-07:10

So, we've been going through this series of Colossians saying Jesus is first.

    07:10-07:12

    Jesus is first.

    07:12-07:16

Well, the question is, what does it look like when Jesus is first in me?

    07:18-07:21

Well, it looks like God at work in you, making you like His Son.

    07:21-07:23

Look in your outline, reference 829.

    07:23-07:36

It says, "For those who before knew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers." What's God's goal for you?

    07:36-07:39

God wants you to be conformed into the image of His Son.

    07:39-07:41

That's God's goal for every believer.

    07:42-07:46

That more and more and more you are growing to be more like Jesus Christ.

    07:48-07:51

We have died and been raised with Christ.

    07:51-07:53

We learned that's the theology of the lost children.

    07:54-07:57

But the question is, what does that mean practically?

    07:58-08:00

    That's the theological concept.

    08:00-08:01

    What does it mean practically?

    08:02-08:03

Well, that's when we started this.

    08:04-08:09

Identifying with Christ's death means that we kill some things that are earthly in us.

    08:10-08:11

And remember, we also saw it's putting off.

    08:12-08:14

There's some things that we need to put off.

    08:15-08:22

Well, just as we've identified with the death and the putting off, We also identify with the resurrection and the putting on.

    08:23-08:25

Look at verse 10 again. This was from last week.

    08:27-08:32

He says, "And have put on the new self." You put on the new self.

    08:34-08:43

What is the new self? He tells us, "Our new self is being renewed in the knowledge of the image of its Creator." Put on.

    08:45-08:48

Also notice that this is an imperative.

    08:49-08:55

Saying, "Put on." Here are some things you need to put on.

    08:58-09:00

Let's jump into the text here.

    09:03-09:05

Signs of life. Are you ready?

    09:06-09:07

First of all, look at verse 12.

    09:09-09:22

He says, "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved." I'm going to pause right here.

    09:22-09:26

When he talks about putting on, I want you to see that not just anybody can do this.

    09:27-09:27

    Okay?

    09:29-09:33

If you hear this morning and you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can't do these things.

    09:35-09:59

You're going to hear this message and say, "Go to hell." good things. Those are good things. Those are good things. You can't, you can't put them on apart from Christ. Paul makes that very clear here. Notice he says put on that as, well who can do this? Those who are chosen and holy and beloved. He's talking about Christians born again believers. Chosen.

    10:02-10:07

Do you know if you're a believer in Jesus Christ that God chose you?

    10:09-10:11

    Like a doctor, right?

    10:12-10:13

    Not naturally important.

    10:15-10:15

    Chosen.

    10:17-10:18

    God chose you.

    10:19-10:23

You're like, "Wait a second, I thought I chose God, so which is it?

    10:24-10:29

Did God choose me, or did I choose God?" That's like a whole other sermon, but I'm going to tell you what to do.

    10:30-10:34

Get on our website, MarcusPittsburghNorth.org, and we're going to have a whole blog about that subject.

    10:34-10:46

You're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, are you a Calvinist? Are you a Mormonian? Are you, uh, you know, after watching Sesame Street Church and not sure what you are?" Um, but, uh, check that out on the blog.

    10:48-10:51

But the truth is, we have been chosen by God.

    10:53-10:57

God in His sovereignty chose us for adoption.

    10:59-11:01

He also says we are holy, that's set apart.

    11:02-11:04

    We talked about imputed holiness.

    11:04-11:08

We are perfect in God's eyes because of what Jesus Christ has done.

    11:08-11:12

And he says we are the love and we are the object of God's love.

    11:12-11:14

So because you are these things.

    11:17-11:18

    Number one in your outline.

    11:19-11:19

    Chunk this up.

    11:19-11:21

I let the character of Christ reflect in me.

    11:23-11:26

This is our first set of put-ons here.

    11:26-11:29

I let the character of Christ reflect in me.

    11:29-11:30

Let's look at these whole verses.

    11:31-11:55

Put on then as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, and he gives a list, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, bearing with one another, and if one hasn't complained against another, forgiving each other, as the Lord hasn't forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

    11:57-12:03

And above all these, "put on love" which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

    12:06-12:08

Again, it's putting on. It's putting on.

    12:09-12:11

Here's your dress code for church.

    12:12-12:15

Putting on. Literally, it's used 28 times in the New Testament.

    12:15-12:19

Literally, "put on" is the word we use for getting dressed.

    12:20-12:23

We used that picture last week when you put on.

    12:24-12:35

Imagine if you're dressed in ready for work and you get a car drive by and hits a big nasty muddy garbagey puddle along the curb and just douses you.

    12:36-12:39

You're not going to go in the house and just put new clothes over top of the old clothes, are you?

    12:43-12:47

No, okay. Jane Outterson's no, the rest of you not sure. Okay, I'm with you.

    12:47-12:50

You're not just going to put the new clothes over top of the old clothes.

    12:50-12:51

So this is a picture of the Christian life.

    12:51-12:56

You're going to go in, you're going to take off the old clothes, and you're going to put on the new clothes.

    12:57-12:58

And that's exactly what he's saying here.

    12:59-13:00

    It's putting on, putting on.

    13:01-13:04

Get dressed. Putting on the character of Christ.

    13:05-13:07

I look at the character of Christ reflected in me.

    13:07-13:08

I'm going to go through this list quickly.

    13:10-13:13

Just make a statement about each of these things.

    13:13-13:15

A couple statements. A couple. One here.

    13:15-13:17

    First of all, compassionate hearts.

    13:19-13:23

Compassionate hearts, some translations say, vows of mercies.

    13:24-13:25

    Vows of mercies.

    13:26-13:27

    Jump this stuff.

    13:27-13:28

I care about helping those in need.

    13:29-13:31

I care about helping those in need.

    13:31-13:32

    That's compassionate hearts.

    13:33-13:41

And I like that translation, vows of mercy, because we can indifferently try to help someone.

    13:42-13:47

Say, well, I guess because I'm supposed to do the right thing and I'm supposed to be nice, I guess I'm going to help them.

    13:47-13:49

    That's not compassionate for us.

    13:50-13:52

Compassionate for us, I want it all.

    13:53-13:58

I see the need and that's why it's bowels of mercy because you feel it where?

    13:58-14:00

You feel it in your bowels.

    14:02-14:03

Like, well that's kind of a cursed master joke.

    14:03-14:05

But you know what that feeling is.

    14:05-14:09

When you have that feeling in your gut, in your stomach, like I just gotta do something.

    14:10-14:11

    I just gotta do something.

    14:13-14:13

    Bowels of mercy.

    14:15-14:17

I just gotta help those in need.

    14:18-14:23

Kindness. I care about your well-being as much as my own. That's kindness.

    14:24-14:27

I care about you. I really do care about you.

    14:27-14:30

As much as I would care about myself, that's...

    14:30-14:32

Well, you can't raise yourself higher than that.

    14:33-14:36

Humility. I hold you higher than I hold myself.

    14:37-14:38

    That's a top one.

    14:39-14:41

    Philippines, I believe it's on Philippines 2-3.

    14:41-14:45

Paul says that we should consider how much more significant than ourselves.

    14:45-14:46

    That's humility.

    14:46-14:48

They don't walk into the church and say, "You know who I am?

    14:49-14:50

I'm probably the most important person here.

    14:50-14:55

In fact, my church is probably just closed down." That's not humility.

    14:56-15:00

Humility is, "These are the important people in the church.

    15:02-15:03

    Everybody else." Humility.

    15:04-15:05

    Meekness.

    15:07-15:07

    Meekness.

    15:08-15:10

    Here's what meekness literally means.

    15:10-15:13

I would rather be hurt than hurt someone else.

    15:13-15:14

    That's what meekness is.

    15:16-15:19

I would rather be hurt than hurt someone else.

    15:22-15:22

    Alright?

    15:23-15:28

You're like, "Okay, I got you. Compassion, compassionability, and Israelite." Nice things. Easy things, right?

    15:28-15:29

    Well, no.

    15:32-15:35

I would suggest to you again that they are impossible to fulfill in the flesh.

    15:43-15:43

    However...

    15:43-15:46

Just is putting up with difficulty.

    15:47-15:48

That's why he goes on the list.

    15:49-15:51

    Patience, patience.

    15:55-16:00

I will not grow wearier in dealing with difficulty.

    16:01-16:01

    That's patience.

    16:03-16:04

    That's patience.

    16:04-16:07

I will not grow wearier in dealing with difficult people.

    16:08-16:13

Again, bearing with one another, literally in the Greek language, Hold yourself back from someone.

    16:14-16:15

    Hold yourself back from someone.

    16:16-16:20

Like, we're gonna be honest here this morning.

    16:20-16:21

Did you ever have somebody just like, trying to get on your nerves?

    16:22-16:22

    Anybody?

    16:23-16:24

    Anybody up in the green?

    16:24-16:24

    Okay.

    16:25-16:32

You're just like, "When I see that guy, "I'm gonna let her have it!" Come on, how many people have done that?

    16:33-16:35

You're laughing because you've done that.

    16:35-16:40

When I see him, I'm going to unload on that guy.

    16:45-17:14

I'm not going to That's beyond the same with love people that they like.

    17:15-17:15

    That's easy.

    17:16-17:17

You can love people that you like.

    17:19-17:25

But this is Christ -like to love the unlovable.

    17:28-17:29

    To bear with one another.

    17:30-17:31

    Then he goes on.

    17:33-17:38

He says, look at this, verse 13, "And if one has a complaint against another," well, let's stop there.

    17:40-17:48

Before we read on, I don't know if this quote, if I'm reading it in my head, but what do we typically do if we have a complaint against someone?

    17:49-17:51

We'll jump these four things down.

    17:52-17:54

Here's the wrong way of dealing with complaints about people.

    17:55-18:00

And sadly, this is the common way that complaints about people are dealt, all right?

    18:03-18:06

Top four answers on the board, we're serving 100 people.

    18:06-18:10

What's a wrong way of dealing with a complaint against someone?

    18:11-18:13

Number four, we blow it out of proportion.

    18:13-18:15

We blow it out of proportion.

    18:16-18:28

All of a sudden, this little, you know, misunderstood communication that we had, all of a sudden, that person is like Nazi Al-Qaeda, all of a sudden.

    18:29-18:32

And I can't believe this, and I'm all of a sudden, you know, it's...

    18:32-18:35

Are they even a Christian? I can't believe they even talk to me.

    18:35-18:38

And we just blow the whole thing out of proportion.

    18:38-18:39

I can't believe they did that.

    18:39-18:44

I think people are wounded if they, you know, just pulled out a knife and stabbed me right in the face.

    18:44-18:46

    And I just can't believe.

    18:46-18:48

We just, we blow things out of proportion, really.

    18:49-18:50

Here's a little exercise for you.

    18:51-18:58

When you have a complaint against someone, I want you to clearly, I don't want you to gossip.

    18:58-19:03

I want you to just by yourself, clearly write down and articulate what your complaint is.

    19:03-19:04

    Okay?

    19:04-19:07

But clearly write it down and articulate it.

    19:07-19:08

And sit on it for a couple of days.

    19:09-19:23

And I guarantee you, you're going to look at that in a couple of days and be like, "That's what I'm so offended about, really? Like, that? That is what I'm so upset about? That's my big complaint?" That's why it's always so funny, but it's not funny.

    19:24-19:27

You know, being in ministry sometimes people will have a complaint against each other.

    19:27-19:48

They're like, "I'm scared of the pastor involved!" And they come, and they're like, "Here's why I'm mad at this person!" and I'm just like, "Let me say it back to you." This is why you're mad at them, and they're just like, "Uh... yes?" Like... like...

    19:48-19:50

My counselling session is too short, by the way.

    19:51-19:53

Like... that's your complaint? Like, next?

    19:55-19:58

If one has a complaint, what's another wrong way of dealing?

    19:58-20:00

Number three would be just going to another church.

    20:00-20:01

    That's the American way.

    20:02-20:05

I don't like the way that person in the church is treating me.

    20:06-20:08

I'm just going to pack up and move on.

    20:08-20:09

You're like, wow, Christ, you've done that stuff.

    20:09-20:11

That's the USA just started church play.

    20:12-20:13

Those of us came from another church.

    20:14-20:18

And I hope that you care because you believe that God has called you before starting this ministry.

    20:18-20:27

I sincerely hope that you're not here because the church down the street just made you so mad you've made no effort to resolve conflicts.

    20:28-20:30

Now sometimes these things happen, I get that.

    20:31-20:35

But if you haven't made any effort to resolve a conflict with your previous pastor, you should do it now.

    20:36-20:36

    Okay?

    20:37-20:47

I'm glad that you're here, glad to have people on board, but it would be against the kingdom to just let these unresolved differences...

    20:47-20:52

Even if you decide to stay here or go back or whatever, if you have an unresolved conflict, go back and deal with it.

    20:52-20:59

You can't just sit down and say, "Hey, I left on some bad terms and I want to talk to you about it." Okay? It's safe to keep doing it.

    21:01-21:03

Something like that's how we deal with a complaint.

    21:04-21:07

Number two, we tell others about our complaint, not the person.

    21:08-21:14

We tell others. We tell everybody that can't do a thing about it, and the one person that can do something about it, we'll go to the temple.

    21:17-21:19

That's like the affinity of the laity.

    21:20-21:25

If you have an issue with me, I hope that you care about, then come and tell me.

    21:27-21:28

Just come and talk to me.

    21:32-21:49

I've noticed it with more people, you know, tell everybody else, "Hey Dan, here's my message, I'm just bullied, it ticks me off." And you go, "Hey Tom, you're fine, I don't like that." If I'm doing something, if I have a blood spot, or if there's something you need clarified, come and talk to me.

    21:49-21:49

    Alright?

    21:50-21:53

Because talking to other people about the issue isn't going to resolve the issue.

    21:54-21:57

Alright? That's a wrong way of dealing with a complaint.

    21:57-22:08

Number one, along the same lines, and I think this is what I see most often, is "Please just shut the person out." "Please just shut the person out." Do you know what I mean by that?

    22:09-22:21

It's "I have an issue with you, Ken, and instead of talking with you, I'm just going to ignore you." You can pretend like he's not even here.

    22:21-22:22

I'm just going to ignore him.

    22:23-22:25

And I just shut him out.

    22:25-22:28

You know what? That's really the equivalent of murdering somebody in your heart.

    22:29-22:30

You know, I just don't want this person to exist.

    22:31-22:34

Those are all wrong ways of dealing with complaints, okay?

    22:35-22:36

    So what's the right way?

    22:39-22:42

If one has a complaint against another, look, here it is.

    22:42-22:47

Forgiving each other, as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

    22:47-22:51

Alright, shout it out. How has the Lord forgiven you?

    22:51-22:52

What does he mean by that?

    22:52-22:55

As the Lord has forgiven you, you must forgive one another.

    22:55-22:57

Shout it out. How has the Lord forgiven us?

    22:57-22:58

    Completely.

    22:58-23:01

Completely! I've heard a few people say that. Completely! Right?

    23:03-23:07

In Jesus Christ, how much of your sin are you still guilty of?

    23:08-23:09

    How much? Zero.

    23:09-23:12

    Completely forgiven. Completely forgiven.

    23:13-23:14

    How about the other one?

    23:15-23:16

    Repeatedly.

    23:16-23:18

    Repeatedly. Okay, yeah.

    23:20-23:22

I'm sure there's going to come another day.

    23:23-23:24

    Probably today.

    23:25-23:26

    Where I'm going to sit.

    23:26-23:27

    Some Lord thought of me.

    23:28-23:29

    Are my future sins forgiven?

    23:30-23:34

Yes. Actually, from Jesus died on the cross, all of my sins were forgiven.

    23:36-23:38

So my future sins are forgiven. But He's still going to keep forgiving.

    23:39-23:40

    He's still...

    23:40-23:42

Okay, what else? Any other words?

    23:42-23:43

How else are you forgiven in Christ?

    23:44-23:45

    Continually.

    23:46-23:47

    Well, that was like...

    23:48-23:49

Sorry, I just got off that hospital and stuff.

    23:51-23:53

I'm sorry, what did somebody say here?

    23:55-23:55

    Unconditionally!

    23:56-23:56

    Unconditionally!

    23:57-23:57

    There was a good one!

    23:58-23:59

Ok, somebody back there said something.

    23:59-24:00

    Go ahead, what was it?

    24:01-24:01

    Continually!

    24:03-24:05

    Alright, unconditionally, continually.

    24:06-24:08

That is how Christ has forgiven us.

    24:10-24:12

    So you must forgive.

    24:14-24:18

    So you must forgive.

    24:20-24:21

    Pastor Jeff, I just heard.

    24:21-24:23

Pastor Jeff, that person, we're all committing.

    24:24-24:25

    Yeah. It happens.

    24:27-24:28

    Let's get the scales out.

    24:29-24:34

And let's weigh that person's offense against your offenses towards God.

    24:35-24:36

Who do you think committed more offenses?

    24:37-24:39

That person towards you, or you towards God?

    24:44-24:47

And if Christ says, "You know what?

    24:48-24:51

I will remember their sins no more." Not an issue.

    24:52-24:56

"You are holy, you are perfect." Not an issue.

    24:57-25:08

And then we find the guy that comes along and sits against us one time and says one thing we don't like and we say, "I will never forgive that person!" And by the way, if you have ever said that, you better check yourself.

    25:10-25:14

If you've ever said, "I will never forgive that person," that is not the Attitude of Christ.

    25:17-25:23

Completely, unconditionally, continually, repeatedly, you are forgiven, thoroughly, totally, in Christ.

    25:25-25:26

So we must forgive others, okay?

    25:29-25:34

Then he says, "Above all these put up love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

    25:34-25:40

The word for love is agape." That's the you before me kind of love.

    25:40-25:42

    That's self-sacrificing kind of love.

    25:43-25:43

    That's love the Lord.

    25:44-25:51

"Your deeds above my comfort." Notice he says it binds everything together.

    25:51-25:57

This is kind of a picture that would have been more, I guess, tangibly seen in the first century.

    25:57-26:03

Because in our day, we dress a little different than they did in the first century.

    26:04-26:15

If you can kind of imagine a Middle Eastern person with their robes on, and they'd have the garment to be against their body, and they'd have an attitude, and they'd have a robe.

    26:15-26:18

So they'd have all these clothes hanging off of them, right?

    26:18-26:27

So what they do is they take another cloth and wrap it around it and tie it and basically it cinches everything together.

    26:28-26:35

So what is the thing that cinches everything together when we reflect the character of Christ? It's love.

    26:36-26:42

Love is the thing that kind of brings all this stuff together and ties it and says this is what it is. It's love. It's love.

    26:43-26:51

Now you can try to force these characteristics, but without love it's not going to last and it's not going to be genuine.

    26:54-26:56

You've heard me say this before, I'm going to say it again.

    26:57-27:02

We're not playing church here. We are going for the real thing. That's why I launched a small group last week.

    27:03-27:04

We're going for the real thing.

    27:06-27:12

We are going for passionately pursuing Christ like this.

    27:12-27:14

Because that is what Christ is pursuing in us.

    27:16-27:17

So we are going for the real thing.

    27:17-27:19

We are not putting on a show.

    27:19-27:20

    We are not playing church.

    27:21-27:25

We are going for an authentic faith walk with the Lord.

    27:25-27:26

That is what we are going for.

    27:28-27:30

A lot of you know my son Cade.

    27:32-27:38

One of the things Cade likes to do, he's five, every year I shop he's lifting up your year.

    27:39-27:48

Did you know Cade, he was the kid that was kicked right in the face by a horse, and last March I thought he was dead, and not one broken bone, I believe, was on him.

    27:50-27:56

In the most, you know, incredible way imaginable.

    27:57-28:00

One of the things Kate likes to do is he likes to play dress up.

    28:01-28:05

And then you're like, "That sounds kind of feminine." No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

    28:08-28:11

Amanda, he dresses up in male-y, dress up things.

    28:12-28:18

We're talking pirates, we're talking firefighters, we're talking superheroes, okay?

    28:19-28:20

But here's the thing with Kate.

    28:21-28:25

He doesn't really go for one motif.

    28:26-28:31

Cape usually goes for several things at the same time.

    28:32-28:44

He'll come up to me, and he'll have on his Superman cape, a pirate costume, and he has this red cowl cap.

    28:46-28:57

And he'll come up to me, and he'll jump in front of me, and be like, "Hello, Cape!" And I'll be like, "Cape, where are you?" And he'll say, "I'm Super Pirate Cowboy!"

    28:57-28:58

    [laughter]

    28:59-29:06

I'm like, "Wow! Super Pirate Cowboy! That's... that's...

    29:07-29:15

...cooler than anything I can conceptualize in my head, that's what that is." Yesterday, he said, "A pirate has had a...

    29:17-29:19

    ...pirate costume... clip on top."

    29:20-29:21

    [laughter]

    29:22-29:28

For the slightly less business technical, by the way, the pirates.

    29:29-29:32

Well, here's my point of this.

    29:33-29:35

Cade likes to put a lot of things on.

    29:37-29:39

And I'm only saying this because he's not here.

    29:40-29:42

But it's not real. Is it real?

    29:43-29:46

It's not. He's not really Super Pirate Calvin.

    29:47-29:53

Not really, because if he really was, he could fly, have a ship, and a horse.

    29:54-29:54

    Right?

    29:55-29:57

    That's not real!

    29:58-29:59

    But here's the point.

    30:02-30:10

When we've reflected the character of Christ, love is the thing that makes it real.

    30:11-30:12

    Do you understand that?

    30:13-30:21

It's the love of Christ in us, letting our light shine through us, reflecting it.

    30:22-30:23

    That's what makes it real.

    30:26-30:33

This church could be made known for a lot of things.

    30:34-30:47

This is the new church, and this is the church that was in Marshall Middle School, and this is the James MacDonald church, and this is the church with a really talented worship team, and all good things, okay?

    30:50-30:52

This needs to be a church where people are alive.

    30:54-31:04

And again, not superficially, not cheesy, game show host, Sunday morning, so busy, but it's not real.

    31:05-31:07

This needs to be a church where people genuinely love each other.

    31:08-31:22

And when people leave, they might say, "You know what? I didn't really know those worship songs and the preacher is obviously goofy for Coco Pops." But, I know that those people really seem to genuinely care about me.

    31:23-31:26

That's what we're going for. Love is going to be the thing that binds us all together, okay?

    31:31-31:34

So, besides in life, I let the character of Christ reflect in me.

    31:35-31:38

Number two, I let the peace of Christ rule in me.

    31:40-31:51

"And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body, and be thankful." What is the peace of Christ?

    31:51-31:53

Peace is used in different ways in the New Testament.

    31:54-31:56

Sometimes it's like a peace treaty.

    31:57-31:58

There's agreement now, and there's peace.

    31:59-32:01

Sometimes it means an attitude of rest.

    32:01-32:05

And really both of these pictures are in line in this passage.

    32:09-32:16

It is because we have peace with Christ, and He gives us rest at the same time.

    32:18-32:25

Interestingly, it says that the peace of Christ rule, this word for rule, is a term used for an umpire deciding the outcome of a game.

    32:28-32:29

    That's what rule means.

    32:30-32:31

    What's he saying here?

    32:31-32:33

Christ's peace guides us in making decisions.

    32:35-32:42

Every decision affirmed by the Holy Spirit, or we can say wrong decisions, leaving us spiritually unsettled.

    32:44-32:47

Did you ever have to make a decision?

    32:48-32:51

A really tough decision, and you're just like, not really sure what to do.

    32:55-33:03

But you come to that place where you're making a decision, And you say, "It was a hard decision to make, but I know, I know that I made the right decision." Did you ever have that happen?

    33:04-33:04

    That was hard.

    33:05-33:09

But I know, and here's a lot of times what happens for me to be honest with you.

    33:09-33:14

Sometimes I'll be thinking about making the wrong decision and I just get to the point where I'm like, "I can't do that.

    33:15-33:16

    I can't do that.

    33:17-33:19

The peace of Christ isn't ruling in my heart right now.

    33:20-33:27

I can't do that." And if you've walked with Christ, You know exactly what I'm talking about.

    33:27-33:29

Some of you might not understand this, but...

    33:31-33:38

When you're walking in the Lord, when God's Holy Spirit is reigning in you, one of the things that happens is, His peace comes on you.

    33:39-33:40

    It rules in us.

    33:42-33:43

    It's a sign of life.

    33:44-33:54

Some of us here this morning, you might be facing a decision, you might be saying, "Well, I know exactly what I should do." Maybe there's some selfish motivation to not do the right thing.

    33:57-34:03

I counsel you this morning is just do the right thing and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.

    34:06-34:09

Pastor, you know sometimes, sometimes I don't have peace.

    34:09-34:13

You know sometimes, sometimes it seems like I have a hard time feeling that rest.

    34:14-34:17

Well, right here in the text it tells us what hinders peace.

    34:18-34:19

    See that last phrase?

    34:19-34:20

    Peace is to be thankful.

    34:24-34:25

If you carry a burden of sin, you carry a burden of grace.

    34:25-34:32

attitude of ungratefulness in your heart, you're not going to have the peace of Christ in your heart at the same time.

    34:34-34:38

And Paul made that very clear in Philippians chapter 4, I have it here outlined.

    34:39-34:45

Don't be anxious about anything, but in everything, my friends, on occasion of Thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

    34:47-34:51

You're going to get the peace of God that's going to surpass all understanding.

    34:51-34:53

work towards your hearts and your lives.

    34:53-34:54

    In Christ Jesus.

    34:55-35:13

Notice he says, "Thanksgiving!" "Thanks for fertile soil, for peace." "Ungratefulness will hinder this peace." You know, one of the things that just breaks my heart.

    35:17-35:25

Sometimes, you know, being a pastor or a minister, you deal with a lot of people at their best and also people at their worst.

    35:26-35:30

And I've seen on numerous occasions where there's a death at the table.

    35:33-35:35

And the deceased has a will.

    35:37-35:41

And says, "Well, I want Tom to get my truck.

    35:45-35:53

Naomi to get my kitchen appliances." Well, now all of a sudden Leo hates Paul because I went in the truck.

    35:54-35:55

    I went in the truck!

    35:55-36:00

You know, Joseph said, "I can have your truck." I'm not making light of it, I've seen it.

    36:00-36:06

Families divided, torn apart, ungratefulness destroying peace.

    36:07-36:08

    Ungratefulness destroying peace.

    36:08-36:10

Do you want the peace of Christ to rule in your heart?

    36:12-36:12

    Be thankful.

    36:13-36:13

    Be thankful.

    36:15-36:51

"Thankfulness should be as natural to a Christian as breathing." "When you stop to consider all that you have, be thankful." "Sign of life number two, I let the peace of Christ rule in me." "Sign of life number three, I let the word of Christ reside in me." "The word." "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom." Singing songs of hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God the Word.

    36:53-36:57

So let's pretend that your heart is a house.

    36:59-37:05

What is the relationship between the Word and your heart as a house?

    37:05-37:08

Is the word a relative to only business on holidays?

    37:10-37:12

    Like the Christmas vacation, right?

    37:13-37:14

Is that how the word is in you?

    37:15-37:20

Like, yeah, I have a copy of the Bible, but I only read it a couple times a year.

    37:23-37:26

Is that how the word comes to your house?

    37:28-37:34

Or maybe the word is like a kid off college.

    37:35-37:36

Every weekend I get the Word.

    37:36-37:38

That's the Word of my life Pastor Jeff.

    37:38-37:40

Every weekend, every weekend I get the Word.

    37:41-37:43

Every weekend, well what does your Bible say?

    37:46-37:52

It says, "Let the Word of Christ dwell in you richly." That means abundantly.

    37:52-37:57

That means the Word has moved in, taken up residence.

    37:58-38:00

    I'm a homebody. I'm not leaving.

    38:01-38:02

    That's the sign of life.

    38:02-38:05

When the Word of Christ is constantly in you.

    38:06-38:07

You see that in the believers.

    38:07-38:11

I think the guy who comes to mind is Ted Shaw, the head of the Marcus Bobby Fellowship.

    38:11-38:18

That guy is just constantly like, "Scripture, Scripture, Scripture, Scripture." You're not going to have a conversation with him.

    38:18-38:21

Or he's not going to leave you with an encouragement from Scripture.

    38:22-38:23

    That's just Him.

    38:23-38:27

And the Word of Christ is richly, abundantly dwelling in Him.

    38:28-38:30

How is it in you? It's a sign of life.

    38:32-38:36

Every thought, every word, every attitude, every action.

    38:37-38:42

God's Spirit in me, using God's Word in me, so that God has His way in me.

    38:42-38:43

    That's what God's after.

    38:43-38:44

    Are you on that agenda?

    38:53-38:58

He says, "Teaching and admonishing." That's just the, I read from the original rabbi, a positive and a negative.

    38:59-39:00

That's what we do in church.

    39:01-39:03

Teaching and admonishing. Teaching is a positive thing.

    39:03-39:05

I need to tell you some things about Jesus.

    39:05-39:08

I need to tell you some things about what God says in His Word.

    39:08-39:20

As teaching, admonishing is warning, listen, if you're not serious about what God said in His book, I've got to warn you. I've got to warn you about some things.

    39:21-39:43

Throughout the Bible, I tell you already, if you have not received Jesus Christ as your Savior, this morning, that He said, "Sing Psalms in hymns and spiritual songs." "Put thankfulness in your hearts to God." What's the difference between a Psalm and a spiritual Psalm?

    39:43-39:44

    The songs.

    39:45-39:47

    This is profound. The song.

    39:48-39:49

    It's a song.

    39:52-39:54

Did you get why we called it like that?

    39:54-39:59

A song is a song. It was just the songs set to music.

    39:59-40:05

You'll notice sometimes, you know, Sam and Lauren and the crew will be, and Jay and Bob will be leading a song.

    40:05-40:08

Like, oh yeah, that's like straight from the songs.

    40:09-40:11

That's why we're doing this. Okay?

    40:29-40:44

It's not like We sit down and we talk about that, we map that out.

    40:44-40:51

And it's very important to us that we are honoring the Lord in our service with the music that's being sung.

    40:51-40:52

    It's very intentional.

    40:53-40:54

    I'm sure you've thought that.

    40:56-41:02

But I let the Word of grace reside in it's not just information, it's emotion, but it's both.

    41:03-41:07

It's not just worshipping in truth, but it's also worshipping in spirit.

    41:08-41:08

    It's both.

    41:09-41:11

Letting the Lord Great Resound in me.

    41:14-41:15

    Oh there's thankfulness again.

    41:15-41:16

    You see that right there?

    41:17-41:18

    The thankfulness in your hearts.

    41:18-41:20

You've seen that a lot with Colossians haven't you?

    41:22-41:35

    Colossians 1.3 1.12 2.7.3 15-17 1.2 1.4 1 more.

    41:36-41:43

Let the name of Christ I let the name of Christ resound in me.

    41:45-42:03

And he says, "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." I'm working on a study Bible.

    42:04-42:05

    I'm writing a study Bible.

    42:05-42:06

    Did you know that?

    42:06-42:10

I have a commentary, I have a footnote for this verse.

    42:11-42:18

And it just says, "Ding." That's like all it says. "Ding." Like, yeah, this is it. This is it.

    42:19-42:20

    So let's try that.

    42:21-42:32

"Whatever you do in the Word of the Lord, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father for Him." "Ding." Like, what else do we need to say, right?

    42:33-43:16

This is the simplest verse in the whole Bible I am not concerned with Everything I do should be for Jesus Christ, because of Jesus Christ, and powered by Jesus Christ.

    43:17-43:21

That's the Christian life, that's what he says right here. Everything made for Jesus.

    43:23-43:26

So as I close, let me ask you, are you alive?

    43:28-43:30

    Are you alive in Christ?

    43:31-43:33

If you are, these are signs of life.

    43:38-43:44

And like God's sovereign will and man's personal responsibility, sometimes it's hard to discern.

    43:45-43:48

I'll just be honest with you, sometimes it's hard to discern.

    43:49-43:56

That these are things that we are commanded to do, but the Bible says that these are things that the Holy Spirit does in us and through us.

    44:00-44:07

It really boils down to this.

    44:07-44:10

I want you to write these questions down as you are examining yourself.

    44:11-44:12

It boils down to the heart.

    44:15-44:17

Are you trying to fulfill these sins in the flesh?

    44:21-44:23

Are you letting God's Holy Spirit work in you?

    44:23-44:27

What you find is you're yielding your will, you're cooperating with His work.

    44:29-44:31

    We jot these questions down.

    44:34-44:37

Before worship team is making their way up, we'll wind it down here.

    44:37-44:38

    We jot these questions down.

    44:39-44:40

    First question is this.

    44:41-44:48

With these signs of life, let me ask you to ask yourself, Do I have an appetite for these things?

    44:50-44:53

Do I have an appetite for these things?

    45:00-45:01

    That's a side of life.

    45:05-45:07

Do I have an appetite for these things?

    45:07-45:09

None of us do these things perfectly.

    45:11-45:13

But do you have an appetite for these things?

    45:14-45:15

    Second question.

    45:15-45:18

Do I see real growth in me in these areas?

    45:19-45:20

    Signs of life, right?

    45:21-45:28

They, our Sesame Street guy, he said, "They grow, right? Don't living things grow?" If you're alive and raised, you should see growth.

    45:31-45:45

You should be able to look back and say, "You know what? I see how, you know, the past month or the past year, I see how the world's been growing me in so many ways." You should see signs of growth.

    45:47-46:01

If you're sitting here this morning and you're saying, you know, I gave my life to Christ back in 1877, and I really haven't seen any difference in my life since then, we can die, because living things grow.

    46:04-46:05

    Last question.

    46:06-46:09

Ask yourself this, am I unsettled in my spirit that these things are gonna happen?

    46:12-46:14

It's one of the ways the Holy Spirit works in me.

    46:14-46:17

I don't know if he's like that for you, There's just time for that.

    46:18-46:21

The Holy Spirit will be stirring, reading these passages, reading them, "You know what, Jim?

    46:22-46:24

Patience is an area that I've been working with you for a while.

    46:25-46:36

I'm going to keep working with you, because you don't quite have it." And there's enough subtleness in me, because I see how much more I have to grow.

    46:38-46:40

Not just in that area, but in so many.

    46:43-46:44

    Signs of life.

    46:46-46:47

    Christ alive in you.

    46:51-46:52

    Now let's get dressed.

    46:53-46:55

We put some things to death.

    46:56-46:58

    We cast off some things.

    47:02-47:04

Now let's be dressed in the heart of Christ.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Colossians 3:12-17

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another.

Supernatural Born Killer

Colossians so far: I am thankful for the way the Gospel is at work in the world (Col 1:1-8), so I am praying for God’s will to be done in the church (Col 1:9-14), which is all about Jesus, because He is sovereign God (Col 1:15-20) who reconciled us and made us perfect (Col 1:21-23), giving us the ministry of proclaiming Him (Col 1:24-29), and a burden to see the church succeed (Col 2:1-7), by avoiding false teaching (Col 2:8-10), because Jesus provided a total victory in your salvation (Col 2:11-15), so don‘t let people bully you into trying to add to Jesus (Col 2:16-23). Therefore, keep your mind on things in heaven (Col 3:1-4)...

I am ruthless towards sin:

  1. Because sin can Destroy my life (Col 3:5)

  2. Because sin is the reason God’s Wrath is coming (Col 3:6)

  3. Because sin defines who I Was, not who I Am (Col 3:7)

  4. Because sin can destroy my Community (Col 3:8-11)
  5. 2 Corinthians 4:16 - Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

Open up to Colossians chapter 3.

    00:07-00:17

Colossians chapter 3. As we continue our series, Jesus is, tell me church, first.

    00:17-00:27

Jesus is first. If you don't remember a single other thing when we get through year one, our first year at Harvest Bible Chapel, we want you to remember what?

    00:27-00:30

    Jesus is first.

    00:35-00:38

When your Bible is open, grab your sermon outline.

    00:40-00:41

We have at the top for you.

    00:42-00:46

This is sort of a summary of where we are so far in Colossians.

    00:46-00:48

I want to share this with you again, and here's why.

    00:49-00:55

Everything that we're going to be talking about is built upon this foundation.

    00:55-01:06

Understand when the Apostle Paul wrote these letters, usually about the first half, Hebrew, Latin, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians especially, the first half is really about doctrine.

    01:07-01:12

Doctrine, here's who Jesus is, and here's what he's done, and here's what he's done, and here's what that means.

    01:13-01:15

And the second half of the epistles are practical.

    01:15-01:17

Therefore, here's how we should live.

    01:18-01:28

So it's really important for us to understand that we're not just yanking a verse out of the Bible and running with it, saying here's what I think it means. It's we're taking God's Word as He presents it.

    01:29-01:47

So this is really important that we're remembering this foundation that we've been laying these past few months going through Colossians because everything we're talking about today is built on that. So I'm going to read this. I want you to uh you know go along with me on this.

    01:48-01:52

Just quick review. What have we talked about Colossians so far? What the Apostle Paul tells us.

    01:53-01:55

I am thankful for the way the Gospels work in the world.

    01:56-02:17

So I am praying for God's will to be done in the Church, which is all about Jesus, because He is Sovereign God, who reconciled us and made us perfect, giving us the ministry of proclaiming Him, and a birth of the Seated Church Succeed.

    02:20-02:21

    by avoiding false teaching?

    02:23-02:28

Because Jesus provided a total victory in your salvation.

    02:30-02:36

So don't let people bully you into trying to add to Jesus than last week.

    02:37-02:40

Therefore, keep your mind on things in heaven.

    02:42-02:45

And that brings us to Colossians 3, verses 5-11.

    02:45-02:49

I'll just take one of your ten verses, and then we'll break it down.

    02:50-03:06

"Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you, sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

    03:07-03:09

On account of these, the wrath of God is coming.

    03:12-03:19

In these you too must watch when you were living in them, but now you must put them all away.

    03:21-03:28

Anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

    03:30-03:44

Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices, and put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge, after the image of its Creator.

    03:47-04:03

Here, there is not grief to Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free, but Christ is all, and in all.

    04:05-04:15

And one of the things that we really rejoiced in studying the Word of God was the truth that Jesus Christ provided a total victory for your salvation.

    04:17-04:25

Total victory. Sin has been defeated. Death has been defeated. The devil has been defeated.

    04:26-04:26

    it.

    04:29-04:31

Let's be very honest this morning.

    04:33-04:35

Sometimes even as believers we still struggle.

    04:37-04:37

    I do.

    04:38-04:39

    Anybody else?

    04:39-04:40

Or are you just going to like leave me up here?

    04:41-04:41

    Okay.

    04:42-04:43

    Do you still struggle sometimes?

    04:44-04:45

    Do you still struggle?

    04:45-04:47

Do you still find that you're a Christian walk sometimes?

    04:49-04:53

Maybe you find yourself saying this, I'll just be totally transparent with you.

    04:53-04:56

There's times when I like it, I find myself saying this.

    04:56-04:56

I'm not saying that you're a Christian walk.

    04:56-05:00

I don't feel very victorious today. I'm just being honest with you.

    05:01-05:29

You know, my head knows the work that Christ has done, but sometimes my attitude or my emotions come alongside and say, "Yeah, you know what Jesus has done, but I don't feel very victorious today." Why is that? Why are there times that I still struggle?

    05:32-05:38

We talked about this. We are dead to sin. Right?

    05:40-05:43

But listen, this is very important. We are dead to sin.

    05:46-05:48

But sin is not dead to me.

    05:50-05:55

We are dead to sin, but sin is not dead yet.

    05:57-06:01

Elsewhere in Scripture, the Apostle Paul, in the Resurrection of the Holy Spirit, talks about this.

    06:01-06:06

Galatians chapter 5, verses 16 and 17. I'm just going to paraphrase. You can jot that reference down.

    06:08-06:18

He says this, "Walk by the Spirit so that you don't fulfill the lusts of the flesh." And then he tells us that these two things are in opposition to each other.

    06:19-06:28

You know, the work of the Holy Spirit who lives in us and through us, yet we still reside in earthly, fleshly bodies.

    06:28-06:31

Anybody reside in an earthly, fleshly body? Anyone?

    06:31-06:33

Anyone? The answer is yes, everyone.

    06:34-06:36

Are you in a body? Anybody bring their body with them this morning?

    06:37-06:43

You're like, "Yeah, my body's here, but my mind's not." Get them both here right now. You live in an earthly fleshly body.

    06:44-06:44

    Okay?

    06:45-06:47

So we are dead to sin, but sin is not dead yet.

    06:48-06:55

We are... we have God's Spirit in us, but we still live in this sinful flesh.

    06:57-07:03

And even though sin has been defeated, sin still attacks.

    07:05-07:22

And I like the way John the Parther put it best. He said, "Sin is like a defeated king." Who has been defeated, he has been dethroned, and he's been kicked out, but he still has a desire to attack his former subjects.

    07:22-07:29

He still has a desire, he wants to hurt his former subjects. He knows he can't conquer them, but he wants to hurt them.

    07:30-07:32

That's the spitefulness of the devil.

    07:34-07:38

That's the fallenness of our sinful flesh.

    07:39-07:41

I want you to think about it this way.

    07:42-07:48

There's a past, present, and future sense in talking about sin.

    07:49-08:00

For the believer, past tense as you can say, "We were saved from the penalty of sin." Right? Is that true in Christ?

    08:01-08:03

We were saved from the penalty of sin.

    08:04-08:08

We are being saved from the power of sin.

    08:08-08:10

    That's the present tense.

    08:10-08:12

We are being saved from the power of sin.

    08:12-08:19

And ultimately, we will be saved from the presence of sin.

    08:19-08:21

    Who's looking forward to that?

    08:21-08:31

That day that we shed this flesh, and we are with our Lord, And we are no longer even in the presence of sin.

    08:33-08:34

    Can't wait for that.

    08:36-08:39

This passage we're looking at today is dealing with sin in the present.

    08:42-08:43

    Here's the key.

    08:45-08:45

    Don't miss this.

    08:46-08:51

Positional reality must be displayed in practical living.

    08:51-08:52

    I'm gonna say that again.

    08:53-08:57

Our positional reality must be displayed in practical living.

    08:59-09:03

Meaning this, God through Christ has pronounced you holy.

    09:05-09:10

And that holiness is displayed in our practical living.

    09:11-09:18

And last week when we were looking at the first part of chapter 3, we saw that all of this stems from knowing our identity in Jesus Christ.

    09:19-09:29

We're identified with the death of Jesus Christ, which means we're identified with the truth that we are dead to sin, We are dead to the world and we have been made alive in Him.

    09:30-09:30

    Right?

    09:33-09:37

Our lives are hidden in Him. We saw it. He is our life.

    09:39-09:44

So when it comes to dealing with sin in the here and now, understand this.

    09:45-09:47

Nothing can be done in your own power.

    09:48-09:50

You couldn't save yourself in your own power, could you?

    09:51-09:54

He didn't wake up one morning and say, "You know what? I don't want to go to hell.

    09:56-09:58

I'm going to make things right so I can go to heaven.

    09:59-10:00

    You can't save yourself.

    10:02-10:07

You are totally dependent upon the grace and the power of Jesus Christ for salvation.

    10:08-10:11

What makes you think you can live the Christian life when you're in power?

    10:12-10:14

It's not as if Jesus brought us on.

    10:15-10:33

I said, "Okay, here's new life. You're saved. You're holy. You're forgiven. I'll see you in heaven." And He left us on our own. He kicked us to the door and said, "Okay, now figure some things out." That's not how it works. He dwells in us and through us.

    10:33-10:38

And especially in dealing with sin, it cannot be done in our own power.

    10:42-10:45

How tolerant do you think the Holy Spirit is towards our sin?

    10:46-10:47

    How tolerant?

    10:47-10:58

Or we can say, "How much sin is an okay amount?" But the Holy Spirit says, "Okay, I can live with that." You know, I'm calling inside you and I see that you still have some sinful habits and attitudes.

    10:59-11:00

    Just don't go overboard.

    11:00-11:03

How tolerant do you think the Holy Spirit is towards our sin?

    11:04-11:05

    Here's a word for you.

    11:07-11:07

    Ruthless.

    11:10-11:13

This morning we are going to get ruthless.

    11:16-11:18

That's why I'm talking to Ken because we were praying this morning.

    11:20-11:26

He said, "I don't think I've ever heard anybody pray for a killing spree." But that is exactly what we are praying for this morning.

    11:27-11:31

I pray that after this message we go on a killing spree.

    11:33-11:34

Because of what the text says.

    11:36-11:38

    So jot these things down.

    11:40-11:44

Oh gosh, it would be a really bad place if I died right after I said that.

    11:45-11:45

    Thank you.

    11:46-11:48

The last thing he said was he wanted us to go on a killing spree.

    11:49-11:52

Thank you God for letting me finish this.

    11:55-11:56

    I am ruthless toward sin.

    11:58-12:01

I am ruthless toward sin. I'm going to give you four reasons off of the text.

    12:01-12:04

Why we are going to get ruthless about sin.

    12:04-12:08

Towards sin, the first one is this, because sin can destroy my life.

    12:10-12:12

Because sin can destroy my life.

    12:16-12:19

Look at verse 5 again. First few words of my Bible.

    12:20-12:22

I'm going to talk about how ruthless here it is. How ruthless.

    12:23-12:25

"Put to death." Is that pretty ruthless?

    12:27-12:39

"Put to death." Wait a second, back in verse 3, He says that we have died, so what's going on here?

    12:40-12:43

Understand this is an imperative statement, it's a command.

    12:45-12:48

So understand that Christians, this does not mean that anything goes.

    12:49-12:51

    That is an immature attitude.

    12:51-13:00

If you say, "Well, because Jesus died, I'm forgiven, that means I can do whatever I want." What did Paul say in Romans? "Shall we continue to sin so that grace may abound?" What's the answer?

    13:01-13:04

He says, "Absolutely not! It doesn't work that way.

    13:05-13:10

It's not that Christ died so we're free, so we're free to indulge in the flesh.

    13:10-13:11

    Absolutely not.

    13:13-13:15

    You cannot believe anything goes.

    13:17-13:31

This is the extent that we are to go regarding sin." He says, "Now Christians, in the Spirit of Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, It's time to put some things to death.

    13:32-13:33

    We're not coddling them.

    13:34-13:37

We're not putting them on temporary suspension.

    13:40-13:41

    We're putting them to death.

    13:43-13:44

    Finally.

    13:46-13:50

You know, when I was a kid, I used to love to watch horror movies.

    13:51-13:54

I don't watch them anymore, I think they're stupid, but...

    13:54-14:00

And if you don't watch horror movies, don't feel like watching them because I talked about them today because I'm really counterproductive.

    14:01-14:06

Just take my word for it. They're pretty stupid, right? Anybody seen a horror movie and thought, "Yeah, those are pretty stupid"?

    14:07-14:09

Yeah, they're pretty stupid. Let's be honest. They're pretty stupid.

    14:10-14:13

When I was a kid, I was really into those, you know, "Bride of the Thirteen".

    14:14-14:19

You know, like, "A Nightmare on Elm Street" movies. So stupid.

    14:20-14:27

But when I was preparing this message this week, I was really thinking about Friday the 13th especially.

    14:28-14:29

This is one of the stupid things.

    14:30-14:37

How many times did a scenario like this take place where, what's the mask guy, hockey mask guy, what's?

    14:37-14:38

    >> Jason.

    14:38-14:41

    >> Jason. I knew that, I just see how many people.

    14:41-14:42

I don't watch much of it.

    14:44-14:44

    >> Coffee?

    14:45-14:49

    >> No, we watch something like the 700 Club in our house.

    14:49-14:52

You've seen that. You know what I'm talking about.

    14:53-14:56

If you don't, obviously a lot of people here do, they can tell you.

    14:57-15:03

But you've seen these scenes where Jason, you know, is coming after someone, awkwardly slow.

    15:05-15:08

And then something like this happens, like they pull out a gun, and it's like BANG!

    15:08-15:17

And, you know, he gets shot and he goes down, and then the person's so scared, and they drop the gun right beside him.

    15:18-15:28

And they've been like, back and away, and he's like laying there, young, rink aside, not moving.

    15:28-15:29

And then what do they do?

    15:30-15:31

    What do they typically do?

    15:31-15:32

    They run!

    15:33-15:35

And when I was a kid, this just drove me completely insane.

    15:36-15:41

When I was a kid, I always said, "Why don't they just keep setting?" What would you do if you were that person?

    15:42-15:45

You would pick up that guy, and what would you do?

    15:46-15:50

You would unload that thing in his eye!

    15:51-15:53

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

    15:54-15:58

And then you'd go get his machete and you'd just take his head off, and then you'd burn it, right?

    15:58-15:59

    That's what I would've done.

    16:02-16:02

    Why?

    16:04-16:08

Because I saw like... how many did they make? Like 86 of them?

    16:08-16:12

I saw that up to there, that sometimes you'd think he's dead, right?

    16:12-16:15

and he's not there, and he gets up and he's coming after you.

    16:16-16:24

And I'm like, "No, I'm making sure." And you see, I think that's the attitude in which we need to have towards our sin.

    16:25-16:26

    Like, sin is defeated.

    16:27-16:28

    It's defeated.

    16:30-16:31

So I'll just let it lay there.

    16:32-16:33

It's defeated. I'm just gonna let it lay there.

    16:35-16:37

Surely it can't hurt anything. It's just laying there.

    16:38-16:40

I mean, I gave it a good whack.

    16:42-16:43

I'm just gonna leave it later.

    16:44-16:45

    And then we walk away.

    16:48-16:53

Next thing we know, we're like, "Why am I still messing with this?

    16:54-16:57

I thought that was a done issue." You know why?

    16:57-17:00

It's because we didn't unload the gun in its eye.

    17:01-17:01

    That's why.

    17:02-17:03

    That's what he's saying here.

    17:03-17:05

We gotta put some things to death.

    17:07-17:08

    Like what?

    17:08-17:09

    Well, look at the text.

    17:10-17:13

What did that there for? What is earthly in you?

    17:14-17:28

Remember before he said, "Put your mind on things in heaven." He says, "You still got some earthly things in you, in your flesh." We still dwell in this flesh, and our corrupt flesh still hungers for sin.

    17:29-17:32

Do you know why sometimes you still have an appetite for sin?

    17:32-17:34

It's your flesh. It's your flesh.

    17:34-17:35

    In Romans chapter 7.

    17:35-17:37

Why do I do the things I don't want to do?

    17:37-17:39

It's your flesh. It's hungry for sin.

    17:39-17:41

You live in a body that's hungry for sin.

    17:44-17:45

    That's why it's so rough.

    17:46-17:47

But notice the words "in you".

    17:47-17:49

Circle those words in your Bible.

    17:51-17:52

    "In you".

    17:52-17:55

"Put to death one and therefore one is brutally" "In you".

    17:56-17:57

    Why does he say that?

    17:58-18:00

Because we're really good at pointing out the sin in others.

    18:00-18:01

    Aren't we?

    18:03-18:15

Like, "Dale, I've been meaning to talk to you. Here's some sin in you that needs to be put to death." And then we go over here, "Ken, here's some sin that needs to be put to death in you." And all of a sudden I become like the Sin Gestapo.

    18:16-18:25

You know, "Here's your problem, Bobby. And Bobby, you've got some problems. And Wilson, here's your problem." Here. Here's where it starts.

    18:27-18:31

Put to death what is urgently in you. Okay? In you.

    18:33-18:37

And a private question. Didn't Sergeant Something-O, a couple of weeks ago, tell us?

    18:38-18:41

Remember, do not taste, do not handle, do not touch.

    18:42-18:47

So what's going on here? Are we getting back to that? Are we supposed to tell Paul to back off?

    18:47-18:55

No. See, when we were talking before about the legalism thing, the issue there was we're trying to get more spiritual through externals.

    18:57-18:59

Meaning, my holiness grows from the outside in.

    19:00-19:02

And he's saying just the opposite here.

    19:04-19:05

    It's from the inside out.

    19:05-19:10

These things that he's talking about are internals that manifest as externals.

    19:11-19:14

He's talking about getting after these internals. Let's look at them quickly.

    19:14-19:19

These are really self-explanatory things in a lot of ways. I'm going to make a couple of comments.

    19:19-19:23

But the first one is sexual immorality.

    19:25-19:39

The Greek word is "pornia," which is where we get our word "pornography." Just saying this, sex is one of the greatest gifts that God has given me.

    19:40-19:46

And this issue is when man misuses that gift, or woman misuses that gift.

    19:47-19:51

It's any sexual activity outside of marriage.

    19:53-20:02

You know, sex in, you know, the covenant of marriage, beautiful, you know, God-given gift.

    20:02-20:05

Outside of marriage, it's sexual immorality.

    20:09-20:12

Unless you have a hunger for that, it's time to die.

    20:14-20:14

    Okay?

    20:15-20:24

And, well, that's the act, but I don't know many people that were just walking down the sidewalk one day and stumbled into sexual morality.

    20:24-20:25

    Where does it come from?

    20:25-20:26

Well, the next word is impurity.

    20:27-20:28

    Those are the thoughts.

    20:30-20:31

    Those are the thoughts.

    20:31-20:35

That's when you're not putting your mind on the things above, but Christ is at the right hand of God.

    20:35-20:36

    My thoughts aren't there.

    20:36-20:41

My thoughts aren't on this person who isn't my spouse.

    20:42-20:53

My thoughts are on fantasies and Not what I need to be, I'm thinking this through.

    20:55-20:56

    It's impurity.

    20:56-20:58

Passion is the emotional side of it.

    21:00-21:02

Passion is the emotional side of it.

    21:02-21:04

We live in a culture that is just...

    21:05-21:08

    It's passion off the leash.

    21:09-21:12

    Unrestrained sexual desire set loose.

    21:13-21:17

    It's just, that's what I want, that's what I'm hungry for, That's what I'm going after.

    21:21-21:26

An evil desire is in a lot of ways a synonym of passion.

    21:26-21:33

It's that deep seed of "I just want it." Notice how these sins, you know, sins in the body.

    21:34-21:36

    These are personal things.

    21:38-21:42

And the last thing he mentions here is a comment she says, which he says is really idolatry.

    21:42-21:46

The Greek word literally means "have more".

    21:46-21:48

    Have more. Have more.

    21:49-21:49

    Have more.

    21:49-21:52

You know people like that? Are you one of those people? Have more.

    21:52-21:54

I want more. I want more.

    21:54-21:58

And that's the danger when sin is being fed.

    22:00-22:01

    Sin never gets full.

    22:03-22:06

And we yield an area of our lives to sin.

    22:06-22:09

Next time it gets a little bit easier, but we have to get a little more.

    22:09-22:11

The next time we yield it has to be a little more.

    22:12-22:14

    And it's out of control.

    22:17-22:18

What does he say to do with that?

    22:20-22:21

    Put it to death.

    22:23-22:24

You have some of that earthly appetite in you?

    22:25-22:25

    Put it to death.

    22:27-22:28

    Put it to death.

    22:30-22:31

    Now listen, don't misunderstand me.

    22:31-22:33

We are free from the penalty of sin.

    22:34-22:37

God finished his son for my sin.

    22:37-22:39

That's if you're in Christ, we're going to talk about that in a second.

    22:40-22:52

But listen, one bad decision, one bad decision can bring incredible devastation to your life.

    22:54-22:58

One bad decision can bring incredible devastation to your family.

    23:02-23:05

One bad decision can bring devastation to your testimony.

    23:07-23:16

And I don't have the time to tell you, I never mention names, but I don't have the time to tell you people that I've met personally.

    23:19-23:26

Believers who have put their lives in a ditch because of a bad decision.

    23:28-23:32

I'm not saying in the Lord there's no restoration possible.

    23:32-23:33

    Certainly forgiveness is there.

    23:34-23:35

All of our sins have been forgiven in Christ.

    23:37-23:38

    But sin is the struggle.

    23:42-23:43

    Sin is so the struggle.

    23:44-23:51

And being a pastor in the ministry, I've had people come to me and really struggle with this.

    23:51-23:53

I've had people just be very honest with me.

    23:53-23:59

I have this strong desire for something that I know is not right.

    24:04-24:24

And because of the authority of God's Word, I have to tell people, if you make this decision, understand, you're going to be going down a road that you're going to be looking back to this time that you were sitting across the table from me, going, "Man, I wish I was back there." You're going to turn everything upside down in your life.

    24:24-24:25

    It's going to bring destruction.

    24:26-24:27

    Sin is so destructive.

    24:28-24:29

    So destructive.

    24:29-24:38

I've even known pastors, sadly, who have had some desire to hurt anyone, but they did not put it to death.

    24:38-24:39

They did not put it to death.

    24:40-24:41

They did not put it to death.

    24:41-24:44

They've entertained it and out of ministry.

    24:45-24:51

Out of ministry because of an affair with a secretary or an affair with a counselee.

    24:53-24:56

I'm not going to compare it with the wife of somebody else in the church.

    24:58-25:01

You see, if the devil would have his way, he would kill people with sin.

    25:03-25:03

    Right?

    25:04-25:07

If the devil had his way, he would destroy your life with sin.

    25:08-25:11

He knows, if you're in Christ, he knows your eternity is secure.

    25:12-25:16

But let's run the Lord's name through the mind, and let's destroy your life.

    25:19-25:22

But when Christ has His way, sin is killed in us.

    25:23-25:30

And I hear what you're doing. I hear what you're saying, but the question is, how do I do this?

    25:30-25:36

There may be some people here saying, "I hear what you're saying, put it to death." Yeah, yeah, that sounds real easy, but I tried that and I can't.

    25:40-25:49

If you're sitting here this morning and you don't know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you can't. You're wrong.

    25:51-25:59

So understand this, believers that are here listening. If you're in Christ and Christ is in you, you have no excuse.

    26:01-26:11

Believers cannot say "I can't" because God's giving you the greatest resource in the world, and that's Himself.

    26:12-26:16

Only unbelievers can say "I can't." Only unbelievers lack a resource.

    26:17-26:22

Listen, this must be a deliberate choice. Are we going to walk by the Spirit or walk by the flesh?

    26:23-26:28

And you're saying, "Well, can you give me some handles? You know, when I'm struggling with this." I want you to write some things down here.

    26:30-26:33

I want you to write little outcomes from the text. I'm not making this stuff up.

    26:36-26:37

    I'm just a megaphone.

    26:38-26:40

I don't make up the messages, I just broadcast it.

    26:41-26:42

    And jot these questions down.

    26:42-26:44

You're struggling with the settings here.

    26:44-26:45

    Jot these questions down.

    26:45-26:46

    The first question is this.

    26:46-26:47

    What am I seeking?

    26:49-26:51

Jot that down. What am I seeking?

    26:52-26:53

Now why would I ask you such a thing?

    26:55-27:05

Well, chapter 3, verse 1, "If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above." There's your choice. Are you seeking the things of the earth?

    27:07-27:11

Are you seeking the appetites of your flesh? Are you seeking the things above?

    27:11-27:15

You know, you can't think about two things at the same time, right? You just can't do it.

    27:17-27:22

So what are you seeking? That's the first place to start.

    27:22-27:27

Also, I read you in the text, this was the whole sermon last week, where's my mind?

    27:28-27:29

    Where's my mind?

    27:31-27:39

The longer you let that sinful thought be entertained in your head, thought about in your head, then all of a sudden you start to think about, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I could get away with that.

    27:40-27:48

My wife would never find out. It's not going to hurt it." And you start to entertain it. "I can make an excuse to get out of it." Where's your mind at, man?

    27:50-27:53

You're spending way too much thought power on this sin.

    27:54-27:56

Where are we supposed to put our minds?

    27:57-28:03

Verse 2, "Set your mind on things that are above." Set your mind on things that are above.

    28:03-28:05

So what do I see? Where is my mind?

    28:06-28:07

    Third question, jot this down.

    28:07-28:26

"Will I yield my will to Christ?" "Will I yield my will to Christ?" Sometimes, listen, it's just a matter of falling on your face and saying, "I can't do this, God. I can't do it. God, I am really struggling." You're not going to get that. You know that? You're not going to surprise Him.

    28:27-28:36

"God, I'm struggling right now with this lustful thought and this lustful desire." God's not going to be like, "Oh! You are?

    28:36-28:37

    He knows!

    28:39-28:51

He knows!" You get on your face and say, "God, I need your help! I'm really weak right now and I'm struggling!" You promised to be there to help me these times of temptation, and that's why I'm crying out to you.

    28:51-28:53

Will I yield my will to Christ?

    28:57-29:01

Another note about that. Let me encourage you. Some decisions are best made ahead of time.

    29:04-29:09

Sometimes it's a matter of, I know I'm going to be faced with this temptation today.

    29:10-29:14

So before I get into a situation where I have to make a decision, I'm going to make a decision right now.

    29:15-29:16

I am not going to do it.

    29:18-29:20

I am not going to be flirty with that person.

    29:21-29:28

I am not going to send the emails with the winky emoticons, right Dale, that we've talked about.

    29:29-29:35

I hate those. Dale and I did a peer review study of three young men one time and Dale was all about the winky emoticons.

    29:35-29:38

Just our little way of flirting. Just our little way of...

    29:38-29:39

    Kill it.

    29:40-29:41

    Just kill it.

    29:42-29:44

Make these decisions ahead of time.

    29:44-29:55

I'll tell you from personal testimony, there's a big difference between the Jeb Miller who seeks the Lord and is in His Word and praying at the beginning of the day, versus the Jeb Miller who is seeking the Lord and praying in the Word at the end of the day.

    29:57-29:57

    Big difference.

    29:59-30:00

    Big difference.

    30:01-30:19

There's a big difference in the way my day goes when I start off by saying, "God, I need you today to be a work in me." Verses Jeff at the end of the day would pray, "God, I'm sorry for the times that today I screwed up.

    30:20-30:22

I didn't treat Aaron the way that I should have.

    30:23-30:25

I didn't treat my kids the way that I should have.

    30:27-30:36

That's been my testimony." One more thing about this, notice Paul doesn't tell us how to kill things.

    30:36-30:40

He doesn't... I gave you some tips there based on things that he said earlier.

    30:41-30:44

But he doesn't say put it to death and here's exactly how to do it.

    30:44-30:47

But we know that there are two ways to kill something, right?

    30:48-30:49

There's really two ways to kill something.

    30:51-30:57

You can kill it swiftly, or you can kill it slowly.

    31:01-31:03

Are you like me? Do you hate snakes?

    31:04-31:05

    Do you hate snakes?

    31:07-31:08

    That's like everybody, right?

    31:09-31:30

Let me tell you something. If there was a cobra on the platform this morning, And Mark Bloomingdale, he's about the only guy I can think of that would, you know, be manly enough to do this, wrestled that thing to the ground and put it in a cage.

    31:31-31:32

    Oh, that's not what happened.

    31:33-31:35

If you know Mark, you know what I'm talking about.

    31:36-31:39

He wrestled that thing to the ground and put it in a cage.

    31:41-31:42

What am I going to do with that snake?

    31:43-31:44

    Think about taking him?

    31:46-31:47

I'd just like to ride in the car with me.

    31:47-31:48

The kitten would like to see it.

    31:49-31:51

I'll just let it sit here while I'm preaching.

    31:53-31:53

    Or...

    31:54-31:57

You know what? I'm going to leave it in the cage and I'm just not going to feed it.

    31:58-31:59

What do you think I'm going to do with that snake?

    32:01-32:03

Kill that thing as fast as possible.

    32:03-32:05

Okay? We're going to go around here.

    32:05-32:06

Who can kill this thing the fastest?

    32:07-32:07

What kind of game do you go?

    32:08-32:10

Kill this thing as fast as possible.

    32:10-32:12

That needs to be our attitude before we say it.

    32:12-32:16

Too often we're content to just, maybe we'll let it start out.

    32:17-32:19

You know, kill it and then start it.

    32:19-32:21

    That's my philosophy. Right?

    32:22-32:22

    Put it to death.

    32:24-32:27

I'm very close towards sin because sin can destroy my life.

    32:30-32:34

    Secondly, look at verse 6.

    32:34-32:54

"On account of these, the wrath of God is coming." "On account of these, the wrath of God is coming." So a word to you if you're sitting here this morning and you have not given your lives to Jesus Christ, you have not yielded to His Lordship, you have not been born again, I have a word of warning for you.

    32:55-32:56

Did you know the rabbit of God is coming?

    32:58-33:02

Did you know that? Scripture says it over and over and over.

    33:02-33:13

But there's going to come a day when the Lord is coming back and He is going to deal with sin and sinners once and for all.

    33:13-33:14

    Did you know that?

    33:17-33:18

    Think of it this way.

    33:20-33:28

If you're a believer, life on this earth is the only taste of hell that you'll ever have.

    33:29-33:29

    It's a taste.

    33:30-33:36

But it's all you'll ever have, because when you die, you'll be in perfect glory with the Lord forever.

    33:38-33:48

But listen, if you're not a believer, if you're not a believer in Jesus Christ, this world is the only taste of heaven that's really going to happen.

    33:48-33:49

    This is it.

    33:50-33:58

This is as good as it's possibly going to get for you, because God has promised that He's going to come, And He's going to make all things new.

    34:00-34:05

And part of making all things new is destroying sin and destroying sinners.

    34:12-34:14

Again, He's not threatening the lepers here.

    34:14-34:18

If you're born again, the wrath of God was poured out on Christ.

    34:18-34:20

And you're not under God's wrath.

    34:22-34:24

So why is he including this here?

    34:27-34:31

Why should we get radical about sin? Here's why I think Paul put this in here.

    34:31-34:33

You know why we should get radical about sin?

    34:34-34:35

Because God is radical about sin.

    34:36-34:39

I think that's why he included this verse in the resurrection of the Holy Spirit.

    34:39-34:43

Why should we get so radical about sin? Listen, because God is.

    34:44-34:50

Is God pretty serious about sin? Yeah, he killed his son Because of my sin.

    34:51-34:53

That's how radical God is about sin.

    34:54-34:59

He's personally coming back and destroying everything that you see.

    35:00-35:02

That's how serious He is about sin.

    35:02-35:03

    He's pretty serious.

    35:07-35:09

So if God is that serious about sin, why would we even regard it?

    35:11-35:14

Why would we even entertain a sinful thought?

    35:15-35:17

Like this is something that the Lord hates.

    35:17-35:19

    I should hate this sin.

    35:22-35:24

Because sin is the reason God's wrath is coming.

    35:25-35:27

That's why we're radical and we're ruthless about sin.

    35:27-35:28

    Number three.

    35:29-35:31

Why are we ruthless with sin?

    35:31-35:33

Because sin defines who I was and who I am.

    35:35-35:47

He says, "In these you too once walked when you were living in them." If your faith hasn't changed you, your faith hasn't saved you.

    35:51-35:56

Don't tell me for a minute that you made some profession of faith and nothing changed.

    35:56-35:59

I gave my life to Jesus but nothing changed.

    36:00-36:00

    Then you didn't.

    36:01-36:03

We need to have a serious talk.

    36:03-36:14

Because you will never convince me that the almighty God of the universe who created all this has come to personally indwell your heart and you didn't change.

    36:14-36:17

Really, God's living in you, you're no different than you were.

    36:19-36:25

I think we better take a big step back and examine the substance of your faith.

    36:27-36:36

What reason, rather, we get radical about sin, and dealing with sin in our lives, is because that just isn't who we are anymore.

    36:38-36:42

It just isn't who we are anymore. We talked about that last week, that identity issue.

    36:43-36:45

He says your life is in the Christ of God.

    36:47-36:49

That's just not who I am anymore.

    36:50-36:57

You know, when sin is tempting, you should look at this, or you should indulge in this, or you should have a drink of that.

    36:57-36:59

You know, that's just not who I am anymore.

    37:00-37:01

    That's just not me.

    37:02-37:06

That's who I was, but that's just not who I am.

    37:07-37:09

You know who the most miserable person in the world is?

    37:11-37:20

Some people say, "You know who I think is miserable? People that don't know the Lord. They're probably pretty miserable." Well, there's somebody more miserable than that.

    37:22-37:24

And that's a Christian who is in sin.

    37:26-37:26

    Why?

    37:28-37:32

Because you are acting contrary to your new nature.

    37:33-37:33

    So you're miserable.

    37:34-37:40

You're in sin. It's like you're eating garbage and you know it's garbage.

    37:41-37:45

Like, why am I eating this? This isn't who I am. This isn't who I want. But I'm eating it.

    37:46-37:48

That's the most miserable person in the world.

    37:49-37:51

I'm not a child of wrath. Why would I act like one?

    37:54-37:57

But another bit, you know, this should make us compassionate towards the unsaved.

    37:58-38:04

Sometimes Christians, to our shame, we come to know the Lord, and all of a sudden you start looking your noses down at people who don't know the Lord.

    38:05-38:07

    Like, what's his problem?

    38:08-38:11

You know what his problem is? He's dead. That's his problem.

    38:11-38:15

His problem is he's just living according to his nature. That's his problem.

    38:16-38:18

I'm glad I was ever like that.

    38:19-38:21

Hello? That's exactly who you were!

    38:22-38:23

    Until grace showed up.

    38:23-38:25

Stop staring your nose at other people.

    38:26-38:29

    Non-Christians, they're not the enemy.

    38:30-38:31

They're a victim of the enemy.

    38:32-38:33

They're walking according to the nature.

    38:33-38:36

Why are we so shocked when the world acts like the world?

    38:37-38:39

    "Ooooh!" They're acting worldly.

    38:39-38:40

    That's all they know!

    38:41-38:43

    Okay? It's a little compassion.

    38:43-38:45

They need what you have. Share it with them.

    38:47-38:47

    Alright?

    38:48-38:49

"Aaron, I mean, we go through this all the time.

    38:49-38:52

We're driving down the road and we see somebody pulled over for speeding.

    38:52-38:57

What do I always say, Aaron?" I always say, "Aw, that poor person." Do you know why I say that?

    38:58-39:01

And they're like, "Heh heh heh, you're busted." You know why I say that?

    39:02-39:05

People are like, "Oh, that poor person, that stinks." You know why I say that?

    39:07-39:08

Because that used to be me.

    39:10-39:11

    A few months ago.

    39:14-39:16

But no, I say that because I've been there, man.

    39:16-39:17

I've been there. Sammy, don't shake your head.

    39:17-39:18

You know I've been there, man.

    39:18-39:19

    I know. You know, man.

    39:19-39:20

You know compared to me, though.

    39:20-39:21

    But I've been there, man.

    39:23-39:36

And I'm like, "Oh, I hate that feeling." You know that feeling when you-- When the lights are on in your rear view mirror, the little red balloons, and you're just like, "What are the chances that's my brother-in-law?" Right?

    39:38-39:43

I was just like, "Oh, that's such a sick feeling." And then they make you wait for like, you know, 45 minutes.

    39:43-39:53

It's like, "I'll be right back." Like, "What are you doing making muffins back here? What are you doing, man?" And, uh, that's a sick feeling. So we drive by somebody else and he's pulling over there.

    39:53-39:55

I know what I am, I'm always like, a poor person.

    39:56-39:58

I just want to pull over and like, hug them.

    39:59-40:03

(audience laughs) But Christians, that should be our attitude towards all Christians, like, man, you know what?

    40:03-40:05

    I was totally there, man.

    40:05-40:08

I understand the position that you're in.

    40:09-40:10

I used to live like that.

    40:11-40:12

But I got some good news for you.

    40:13-40:14

    It lasted today.

    40:15-40:16

Why were we so ruthless with sin?

    40:17-40:19

Because sin can destroy my community.

    40:20-40:22

See, he gives two lists in this section, I'm sure you picked that up.

    40:22-40:25

The first list all has to deal with personal stuff.

    40:26-40:28

This list has to deal with community stuff.

    40:31-40:32

These are sins that hurt the community.

    40:33-40:36

This is very important because did you know that we are not called to live in isolation?

    40:38-40:40

We are called to be members of the body, right?

    40:40-40:42

That's why we're so tied up in those small groups.

    40:43-40:50

We don't want you to just come here on Sunday and say, hey, Colleen, it was really good to see you.

    40:50-40:51

I hope I don't see you again till next Sunday.

    40:51-40:52

    What is that?

    40:53-40:55

Small groups is getting plugged in for part of the body.

    40:55-40:56

    We're members with one another.

    40:58-40:58

    Okay?

    40:59-41:00

    We're not living in isolation.

    41:03-41:05

And as God's children, we're done acting like the world.

    41:06-41:07

You know how the world acts?

    41:07-41:08

    Immunity, destroying behavior.

    41:08-41:10

Let me get through this list quickly as we're winding down.

    41:11-41:12

    Anger.

    41:14-41:16

He says, "Put them away." Anger.

    41:18-41:23

This anchor actually literally is the burning anchor.

    41:24-41:26

    This is the...

    41:26-41:29

You know the person that's just always like ready to explode?

    41:29-41:30

You know what I'm talking about?

    41:31-41:32

    That's what this anchor is.

    41:32-41:33

    The person that's just like...

    41:37-41:39

    That's this anchor.

    41:39-41:42

Well the next word, "Rab", that's the explosion.

    41:43-41:44

    That's the explosion.

    41:44-41:48

That's the person that's just like, end of the fuse, bang, and they blow up.

    41:49-41:51

Or you know, I call that Yosemite Sam error.

    41:52-41:56

You know, like, Yosemite Sam, when he gets mad, he just completely flies off the handle.

    41:57-41:59

That's what we're talking about here.

    42:01-42:03

    Yeah, that's pretty deep theology.

    42:03-42:04

    That's funny, I know.

    42:06-42:08

But that's what I think of. It's just exploding.

    42:11-42:12

    Malice.

    42:12-42:13

    Hateful intentions.

    42:14-42:19

hateful intentions. God help us when we would wish ill toward someone.

    42:21-42:22

You know, I think that person doesn't succeed.

    42:25-42:32

You know, he's going down to that drug review in Florida and I know that he loves the audition.

    42:33-42:35

That's malice, man. What are you talking about? That's malice!

    42:37-42:39

You should be wishing the best for people, right?

    42:40-42:44

Malice is just spiteful and hateful intention.

    42:44-42:56

Slander, "Oh, that was coming out." Jesus said, "I was abundance of the heart and mouth speaks." Slander is speaking of someone in a way to make others think less of them.

    42:57-43:00

I can tell you a mouth so and so, how can you think less of them?

    43:02-43:11

I even apologized to Sarah a few months ago because I was talking about somebody in that way, I see this person driving me insane and I just totally throw the person down.

    43:12-43:13

    That's slander.

    43:17-43:22

Obscene talk. That's filthy communication. That's everything becomes an anatomy joke.

    43:23-43:25

    Obscene talk, obscene talk.

    43:25-43:30

When you hear a joke, and then he talks about lying.

    43:32-43:33

    Pretty self-explanatory.

    43:34-43:44

Verse 9, he says, "Do not lie to one another, seeing that you put off the old self and his practices." You want to be a church, who speaks the truth in love.

    43:44-43:49

So he gives us another concept here, and this is really important as we get ready to bridge into next week.

    43:50-43:59

We talked about putting these things to death in the first list, and now he says, "Here's some things you need to put off." Put off.

    44:01-44:08

It's the same concept in the sense of it's radically dealing with sin, but it's using a slightly different metaphor than killing it.

    44:09-44:30

In this metaphor, imagine that you're on your way to work, and you're standing at the curb, ready to go into work, and a car comes by and it's just been raining, and there's slush and mud and all kind of, and just gushes you head to toe.

    44:31-44:34

You're soaked, you're filthy, you stink.

    44:35-44:36

Are you going to walk in the window?

    44:37-44:39

No, you're gonna get new clothes.

    44:39-44:40

When you go to the store, you go home.

    44:42-44:46

Are you just gonna take your new clothes and put them on top of the ones that just got doused?

    44:47-44:49

Of course not, what are you gonna do?

    44:49-44:55

The first thing you're gonna do, you're gonna get home and you're gonna rip those clothes off and probably jump in the shower and then put the new clothes on.

    44:56-44:59

That's the put-on concept he's talking about here.

    44:59-45:01

You know, these things, we just shred them off.

    45:02-45:03

We're done with them. Get them off.

    45:04-45:05

Well, what do we put on instead?

    45:06-45:08

We're going to get to that next week. That's the whole message next week.

    45:10-45:22

A couple more things here. Notice he says, "We put on a new self, verse 10, which is being renewed in the knowledge after the image of its creator." Being renewed.

    45:23-45:24

    Every day renewed.

    45:25-45:25

    Every day.

    45:26-45:27

Here is what the Lord has done.

    45:28-45:29

This is who he says I am.

    45:29-45:31

This is what he has called me to.

    45:31-45:32

    Every day.

    45:32-45:34

    Every day is being renewed.

    45:34-45:37

That's why it's so important that you're in the Word for yourself.

    45:37-45:38

    Every day.

    45:38-45:41

That's why it's so important that you're praying for yourself.

    45:41-45:42

    Every day.

    45:42-45:43

Paul says it's on your outline.

    45:43-45:45

    2 Corinthians 4.16.

    45:46-45:53

"Though our outer self is wasted away, we are filled with the Spirit of God." Our inner self is being renewed day by day.

    45:57-46:01

Renewed in the knowledge after the image of its creator.

    46:03-46:04

    Where does this come from?

    46:06-46:07

Where do we get this knowledge?

    46:08-46:09

Obviously it comes from the Word of God.

    46:12-46:15

I'd like to encourage you that the world has it backwards.

    46:15-46:17

And even some churches have it backwards.

    46:17-46:30

They say things like this, "If you change your behavior, eventually you'll start to think differently, and then you'll be a new person." And I want you to know that that's completely opposite of the way the Bible presents it.

    46:30-46:48

The Bible says, "Christ makes you a new person and a constantly renewed person, which changes the way you think, which changes the way you act." So just as the individual puts off the old self, look at the last verse here with me.

    46:48-46:54

The individual puts off the old self, you know what church, we need to put off barriers ourselves too.

    46:55-47:09

That's why he says, "Here there is none, Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, sinful, slave, free from Christ is all, and in all." He says there are no distinctions in Christ. You know that?

    47:10-47:11

    His salvation is for whom?

    47:13-47:14

Who is the salvation of Christ for?

    47:16-47:17

Ok, who is the French Refresher for?

    47:18-47:19

    Ok.

    47:21-47:23

Shame we had to go out of that way, didn't we?

    47:23-47:25

Who is the salvation of Christ for?

    47:26-47:26

    Everybody!

    47:27-47:29

Whosoever believes in His name will know prayer.

    47:29-47:30

Have you ever heard that verse?

    47:30-47:31

    John 3, 16?

    47:31-47:32

    It's for everybody!

    47:32-47:34

I'm just teasing you. Don't be mad at me.

    47:37-47:38

    It's for everyone.

    47:40-47:43

There's no distinction in Christ and in the Church.

    47:43-47:44

    There's no distinction.

    47:49-47:56

I've done some horrible things in my life, but I'm ashamed of the afterlife.

    47:58-48:00

    But we're on equal ground.

    48:01-48:03

Because we've been renewed in Christ.

    48:03-48:03

So, I'm going to read a passage from the book of Acts.

    48:03-48:14

flesh, and I will tell you, O man, that I have not been a man of the flesh, but So, Greek or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, you know, the Jews and Gentiles, there was a lot of hatred there, a lot of racial hatred.

    48:16-48:22

Paul says, "Not the church. Not to Christ, not the church." Barbarian.

    48:23-48:26

That was actually a policy that was used as an insult.

    48:26-48:30

I think if somebody called me a barbarian today, I would be pretty happy I was today.

    48:31-48:35

You know, it seems like Jeffery nothing but a barbarian that just be walking around.

    48:36-48:38

I'd probably put it on Facebook.

    48:39-48:41

Have a great day, Sam called me a barbarian.

    48:43-48:48

But this word, uh, "Scythian", those are warlike people who were known for their savagery.

    48:49-48:50

    These people were just notorious.

    48:51-48:55

You know, they would take the first person they killed in battle and like, drink their blood.

    48:55-48:58

And like, use the person's skull as a napkin.

    48:58-48:59

And that's what kind of people they were.

    49:00-49:02

I'm not a Christ because Christ is all I am.

    49:06-49:06

    We're a new people.

    49:06-49:08

We're in a community of new people.

    49:08-49:09

    There's no distinctions.

    49:12-49:17

You know, the Bible never tells you to be ruthless.

    49:19-49:21

The Bible never tells you to be brutal.

    49:23-49:28

The Bible never tells you to be merciless, except in one issue.

    49:30-49:31

And that's the deal of the state.

    49:33-49:38

So Church, I want to encourage us all, let's get a little ruthless. Huh?

    49:39-49:39

    Let's get a little ruthless.

    49:42-49:47

You have some things in your life that need killing.

    49:49-49:50

    You know what they are.

    49:54-49:57

Fellow believers, what does the Gospel of the Holy Spirit say? You know what? This has to go.

    49:58-50:00

This has had to go for a while and you've been holding on to it.

    50:01-50:06

It's earthly in you and you've been hanging on to this thing and you know it's wrong. You don't.

    50:08-50:08

    It's time to kill it.

    50:11-50:12

I just want to encourage you. You can't do it on your own.

    50:17-50:22

Don't be looking for the psychologist, the secular psychologist that we are.

    50:24-50:27

The Sigmund Freud way to reveal is not that.

    50:31-51:07

Looking at self-help books, even Christian self-help books, the only way these things are going to die And again I pray for our killing spree.

    51:10-51:12

Because we're holding on to some things that need to die.

    51:18-51:22

Maybe we're wearing some filthy garments that need to be taken off.

    51:25-51:26

    Today's the day.

    51:26-51:28

That's one of the things I love most about the Gospel.

    51:31-51:38

God says, "You can start fresh right now." We need that constant renewal, day by day.

    51:39-51:45

Maybe it's been a while since some of us have been seeking a daily renewal, day to day.

    51:48-51:49

Will you bow your heads with me?

    51:55-52:13

Father in Heaven, I confess to you, Father, before my brothers and sisters, There are some things in my own life that need to be killed.

    52:16-52:17

That need to be put to death.

    52:19-52:23

Father, you know the areas of pride that I've struggled with.

    52:33-52:44

Father, you know the areas in my heart that have just been, just frankly, just flat out conscious, desiring more, desiring difference.

    52:48-53:03

As my brother Mark and I have talked about, just having those expectations, and feeling I'm even disappointed when my own expectations aren't met.

    53:04-53:06

Father, there's some things that need to be put to death in me.

    53:09-53:18

Father, I pray on the power of your Holy Spirit, that you give me the faith.

    53:26-53:39

Father, my brothers and sisters here, I'm sure, if we had some open mic time, I'm sure, if everyone were honest, they could come forward and say there are some things in their own lives that need to be put to death.

    53:43-53:45

Father, I pray today's the day.

    53:47-53:54

That we have people walking out of these doors saying, "I am done with that. I am killing that. Right now.

    53:54-53:56

    That's not who I am.

    53:59-54:02

That might be who I used to be, but that's not who I am anymore.

    54:04-54:09

And walking in the Spirit, I will not fulfill the desires of the flesh.

    54:10-54:11

    It's a battle fought.

    54:13-54:16

You know this, the Lord tells us that Jesus Christ was tempted.

    54:17-54:20

He never sinned, but he was tempted in every way, just as we are.

    54:22-54:25

So you know first hand what it means to be tempted.

    54:28-54:30

But Father we are people who give in to temptation.

    54:36-54:38

I pray for a pillow spree today.

    54:40-54:47

That things are put to death and put to the ground and stay there.

    54:49-54:51

Remind us who we are in you.

    54:57-54:59

Invite your grace when we ask for it.

    55:03-55:05

We pray in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

  • 00:01-00:07

My wife and I have had this conversation countless times over our almost 10 years of marriage.

    00:10-00:19

Maybe you can relate to this, but have you ever asked your spouse, "What are you thinking about?" Because you know they have that look on their face.

    00:21-00:35

And often times they will reply, "Nothing! Nothing!" And unfortunately, Eric couldn't be with us this morning, but she can tell you how the rest of our conversation goes.

    00:36-00:46

I say, "Eric, what are you thinking about?" "Nothing." And I always say, "Well, that's impossible." Isn't that impossible? Can you literally just think about nothing?

    00:47-00:48

    Just give that a try.

    00:49-00:51

Just give it a try. Think about nothing.

    00:52-00:53

    Can you do that?

    00:54-00:55

    You're thinking about something?

    00:55-01:02

I just put a black screen in my mind, and then you're thinking about a black screen.

    01:04-01:07

And you're thinking about how you cannot think about something.

    01:08-01:08

    Right?

    01:09-01:13

It's impossible to think about nothing.

    01:14-01:17

    Your mind is always somewhere.

    01:18-01:20

That's true. Your mind is always somewhere.

    01:22-01:23

The question is, where is it?

    01:23-01:25

    That's the question.

    01:28-01:32

    Sometimes, our minds wander off.

    01:33-01:37

They're somewhere else because they've wandered off.

    01:41-01:45

I remember being in elementary school. For some of us that's a lot further back than others.

    01:45-01:51

But I remember being in elementary school and I had a seat near the window.

    01:52-01:55

And when it was recess time, you could hear the kids out playing.

    01:56-02:01

And you could hear the sound of the kickball being kicked, and kids playing tag.

    02:02-02:04

We tag really hard on the park city.

    02:04-02:07

And you could actually hear the kids getting tagged.

    02:07-02:09

    And you could hear yourself.

    02:09-02:13

Meanwhile, you're sitting there getting some multiplication table math.

    02:13-02:17

And you're just like, "Where's your mind at?" I'll tell you where my mind was.

    02:18-02:19

    My mind was outside.

    02:19-02:20

    I can't wait until recess.

    02:20-02:23

I can't wait to be out there.

    02:23-02:25

I'm missing all this mad stuff.

    02:27-02:30

Sometimes your mind is somewhere else because it wanders off.

    02:32-02:34

I got permission to share this story.

    02:36-02:41

One of our worship leaders up here, I'm not going to mention her name.

    02:45-02:47

Oh, I guess there's only one female up there.

    02:49-03:03

Well, one of our worship leaders has this going on too, where one time Sammy and Laura were over at our house, and I was telling Laura something, and then all of a sudden I realized she just wasn't there.

    03:04-03:10

KB's watching Alvin and the Chipmunks on TV, and Laura's mind and eyes were just locked in.

    03:11-03:15

And we were like, "Laura, Laura, Laura." She was just in the zone.

    03:15-03:17

and he's like, "Let her go, man.

    03:17-03:22

"She's with the chipmunks." But you know, I share that.

    03:22-03:26

I share that because it's the truth.

    03:28-03:28

    Yeah, amen.

    03:29-03:30

But you know what, that's me too.

    03:31-03:33

Seriously, and I'm gonna confess something to you.

    03:33-03:35

    It's a struggle for me.

    03:36-03:42

And so many times I've gone to visit somebody in the hospital and their little TV's on.

    03:43-03:44

    Oh, I hate that.

    03:45-03:49

Just like, if you're in an hospital and they come and see you, do me a favor and turn the TV off.

    03:50-04:12

Because I, like Laura, I've caught myself so many times, I go on in there and I'm like, "Hey, how are you doing?" And they're like, "I just had major surgery, I almost died, and the doctor felt short of my lip." And meanwhile, I'm like, "Oh, the pressure's really strong. Oh, no, you're getting way too high on that." Oh, I'm a minute daughter, minute daughter.

    04:13-04:18

This person's like, yeah, my family's coming in and they're all crying, they're thinking minute daughter.

    04:19-04:21

Oh, I can't believe that was that cheap, that cheap.

    04:21-04:24

Oh, oh, Flinko, I love Flinko.

    04:24-04:27

I think you're gonna Flinko because it's a lot, right?

    04:28-04:33

But that happens to me, your mind just kind of like wanders off to see Lauren.

    04:33-04:35

I'm gonna say, anybody else like that?

    04:35-04:37

Come on, don't leave Lauren, I'm hanging up here.

    04:37-04:39

See what we look for, you see that?

    04:40-04:41

That's like pretty much everybody here.

    04:42-04:43

    You got a short computer?

    04:44-04:44

    Yeah.

    04:45-04:46

    (audience laughing)

    04:46-04:54

Ashley Grims, if you hear me, don't show anything on the screen other than what I'm saying from now until Christ returns.

    04:55-04:59

You're not allowing videos or pictures up there where I'm preaching, I'm just like, oh, oh.

    04:59-05:00

    (audience laughing)

    05:02-05:03

    Ashley, we're trusting you.

    05:05-05:08

This is one track mind that's easily derailed.

    05:09-05:11

So sometimes our minds just wander off.

    05:14-05:18

Or sometimes we actually put our minds somewhere.

    05:20-05:21

    There's an expression for that.

    05:22-05:23

Go to your happy place, right?

    05:24-05:25

    Go to your happy place.

    05:25-05:26

Go to your happy, where are you at right now?

    05:26-05:27

    I'm in my happy place.

    05:28-05:34

And I think of my happy place, I think of when we were in the laws classes when Eric was breaking the bell in.

    05:35-05:41

Meanwhile, he was 10 pounds, 5 feet 3, which were radiated in the C-sections of the Wasp Hotspots.

    05:42-05:46

But, we were in the Wasp Hotspots, and they were doing this real...

    05:48-05:55

Okay. Husbands, sitting with your wives. You're going to close your eyes.

    05:56-05:58

And I need you to visualize your partner.

    06:00-06:04

This is the place that you're going to be in your life.

    06:05-06:07

You're going to go to your garden.

    06:08-06:09

Sarah Murphy, did you have a garden?

    06:10-06:11

    No, okay, no gardens, okay.

    06:12-06:15

Well, we had a garden, so sorry about your lawn.

    06:15-06:18

It must have been a bit short or something.

    06:18-06:20

    But, go to your garden.

    06:22-06:25

And there is a stone wall around the garden.

    06:26-06:35

You can hear the trickle of the fountain as the birds softly tweet in the garden.

    06:36-06:44

The butterfly, the floss pads, breathe in the garden.

    06:45-06:59

And right then, I said, right in the middle of all this, I said, "The flies in my garden are terrible!" "Ahh!" And Aaron just like, "Shut up!

    06:59-07:01

    Shut up!" But they were.

    07:04-07:09

Well, do you know that the Bible actually tells us to put our minds somewhere?

    07:11-07:11

    Okay?

    07:12-07:14

But it's not your happy place, it's not your garden.

    07:15-07:20

But the Bible actually says you need to put your mind somewhere.

    07:20-07:26

Open up your Bibles to Colossians 3.

    07:28-07:34

While you are turning there, turn louder so I know your mind is still here.

    07:39-07:41

I probably have these a lot on Sunday.

    07:41-07:42

    I can't remember on Sunday.

    07:42-07:43

    Don't let them wander.

    07:45-07:46

    Colossians 3.

    07:46-07:48

Turn the pages really hard so I can hear you.

    07:50-07:51

    Don't hurt yourself.

    07:54-08:06

Now, as you're turning there, and it sounds like most of you opened up right to that spot, in a lot of the Apostle Paul's letters, the first half of it deals with theology.

    08:08-08:11

Here are some truths about who Jesus Christ is.

    08:11-08:13

Here are some truths about the atonement.

    08:13-08:15

Here are some truths about salvation.

    08:15-08:20

A lot of times the second half of the epistles are the application.

    08:20-08:27

Because all of these things are true about Jesus and the cross, and who He is and what He's done, and who we are.

    08:27-08:31

And because that's all true, here's how we should live.

    08:33-08:37

Well now we are crossing over into the application part of Colossians.

    08:38-08:46

Okay, you'll notice that in Colossians chapter 3, the very first two words in your Bible should say something like mine.

    08:46-09:06

Mine says, "If then." If all this is true about you, and actually it can also be translated, "Since then." Meaning, since you are in Christ, here's then how we shall live.

    09:09-09:17

Jesus is first over all things, if Jesus won a total victory, if we are made alive and free in Him, how then shall we live?

    09:19-09:22

And here's the answer. This is what we're going to be looking at over the next few weeks.

    09:24-09:25

    So please don't miss this.

    09:25-09:26

    This is so important.

    09:27-09:32

We need to live in the reality of our union with Christ.

    09:35-09:47

See, it would be really easy to get to this application part of the Bible and say, "Okay, now here's the part where we get the rules." "What do I do? How do I get my spiritual? Give me the rules, give me the rules, give me the rules." What did we talk about last week with the rules?

    09:48-09:52

Back off. Rules aren't going to do it. Okay? Rules are not going to do it.

    09:53-10:02

If you think that, you know, I have my own little 11 commandments or whatever, and I just gotta keep them, and that's what makes God happy.

    10:02-10:06

Rules aren't going to do it, so please, drop that down.

    10:06-10:09

We need to live in the reality of our union with Christ.

    10:12-10:17

Jesus has all, and He has the only resources for living a Christian life.

    10:17-10:21

So important. You cannot live the Christian life. You can't do it.

    10:22-10:26

If you're like, "I'm just trying to be a good Christian." You can't do it.

    10:30-10:32

How can I be a Christian?

    10:33-10:35

    Here's the amazing thing.

    10:35-10:39

Being a Christian means that Jesus Christ is living through you.

    10:41-10:44

The Christian life is indeed lived in you, but it's Christ living through you.

    10:47-10:49

    He has the only resources.

    10:49-10:56

Jesus said in John 15, I believe verse 5, He said, "Apart from Me, you can do," what?

    10:57-10:57

    Nothing.

    10:58-10:58

    Nothing.

    10:59-11:01

He said, "I provide you with branches.

    11:03-11:09

"Apart from Him, you can do nothing." The new life of Jesus Christ is real.

    11:11-11:14

And here's the thing, so is remaining sin.

    11:15-11:16

So how do we handle all that?

    11:18-11:20

We still live in the flesh.

    11:22-11:24

We still live in the flesh.

    11:27-11:29

But Jesus Christ gave us eternal life.

    11:29-11:35

So understand if you're here this morning and you're a believer, you're sort of a dichotomy.

    11:36-11:45

You have God's Holy Spirit living within you, but currently you're residing in sinful flesh.

    11:50-11:58

that no sin is not our master anymore, it can influence us if we're not living in the power of Christ.

    11:59-12:01

Last week we learned what will help you grow spiritually.

    12:03-12:10

Notice that the very last phrase in chapter 2, when we talked about our three bullies, we told them to back off.

    12:10-12:13

and Reverend Religion and Mr. Mystic and Sergeant Self-Denial.

    12:14-12:15

    Back off, guys.

    12:16-12:36

He says, "These have indeed an appearance of wisdom," filling in the verse, "but they are of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh." This sermon is really just an introduction to the next couple of weeks, because it's really important that we get this down.

    12:39-12:45

The way that you stop sinning is not by trying harder.

    12:48-13:00

If you hear what they're saying, "I live in the flesh, but I love Christ, so I'm going to start trying really hard to not sin." That was the whole point of the last passage. You can't try hard enough.

    13:00-13:04

That doesn't stop the indulgence in the flesh. It doesn't do it. It just doesn't do it.

    13:09-13:10

    So what will?

    13:12-13:13

The question is, how do I grow?

    13:15-13:16

    How do I grow?

    13:17-13:22

Well, on your outlet, "Spiritual growth only happens..." Ah.

    13:23-13:26

"Spiritual growth only happens..." Four things for us this morning.

    13:26-13:28

How do we grow in Christ?

    13:28-13:32

First of all, when my pursuit is Christ.

    13:38-13:52

"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God." He is addressing Christians.

    13:52-13:55

    "If then" means since then.

    13:55-14:09

If you're a Christian, if you belong to Jesus Christ, if you've been born again, He's saying, "Here's how you grow." So, a quick word for the people that might not be there.

    14:10-14:23

There's a huge danger at this point, because if you don't know Jesus Christ, if you've not been born again, you can listen to the next few sermons in this series and think, "Okay, just give me things to do, just give me things to do.

    14:23-14:25

I'll try to be a good Christian, I'll try to be a good Christian, you can't do it.

    14:27-14:35

And you can polish yourself up and be a moral person and be a religious person, and while nice and squeaky clean, you still had to help.

    14:36-14:37

    Because you can't do it.

    14:39-14:40

    You are dead.

    14:41-14:43

    And you're trespassing sins.

    14:47-14:50

You need the life that only Jesus Christ can give.

    14:51-15:08

If you have not done that, if you embraced Jesus Christ, if you cried out to Him for mercy, if you received Him by faith for the forgiveness of your sins, if you have not done that, none of the rest of us are going to share with you today here at Brookline today.

    15:08-15:10

That has to be the first place.

    15:11-15:14

Jesus has to be the first place in you if you have done that.

    15:17-15:21

If not, Scripture talks about a day of salvation.

    15:21-15:22

Do you know what day that is?

    15:23-15:23

    Today is today.

    15:24-15:26

Today is the day of salvation.

    15:31-15:38

So if then, you've been raised with Christ, understand this is the assumption that Paul is making here.

    15:38-15:42

Paul, you're talking to Christians, so that's the tone I'm going to take with you.

    15:42-15:44

    I'm talking to believers here.

    15:45-15:46

    I'm talking to believers.

    15:47-15:49

Like, well I'm not sure if I'm a believer.

    15:50-15:52

You better see me at the church.

    15:52-15:53

    Okay?

    15:53-15:55

And we will talk about the principles of Christ.

    15:56-15:56

    Don't put it off.

    15:59-16:00

If then you can raise me to Christ.

    16:01-16:04

Seek the things that are above what Christ is.

    16:04-16:06

Seek to get the right hand of God.

    16:09-16:10

    Now this word seek.

    16:11-16:13

In the original language is in the present tense.

    16:14-16:30

It's a continual action. It can also be translated "keep seeking." Like, "Oh, I see what it says. You're seeking things that are above, like, you know, seek after Jesus." "Yeah, I did that once back in like 1994." No, it's a continual. You don't stop doing it.

    16:30-16:36

You are constantly, constantly seeking the things above.

    16:36-16:37

    What are the things above?

    16:41-16:46

Well, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but this one's pretty easy.

    16:47-16:51

What is he talking about above, first of all? Where is above?

    16:52-16:55

Well, look at your verse. Above where?

    16:56-16:57

    Where Christ is!

    16:59-17:01

Just in case you're still not sure where that is.

    17:01-17:02

    Like, wait, where is Christ?

    17:03-17:04

Oh, is Christ in my heart?

    17:10-17:11

    Or...

    17:13-17:14

    So what are these things?

    17:20-17:21

    This is heaven.

    17:21-17:24

This is seeking the values of heaven.

    17:25-17:28

This is what Jesus was talking about in Matthew 6.33.

    17:29-17:33

Jesus said to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness.

    17:36-17:38

So the question is, what are we going for?

    17:40-17:41

What are we going for here?

    17:44-17:45

We're going for the real thing.

    17:45-17:46

    That's what I'm going after.

    17:46-17:46

    How about you?

    17:48-17:54

Are you interested in some kind of a religion that might make you feel good about yourself?

    17:56-17:58

For a couple hours after church, maybe a little pep talk.

    18:03-18:08

Surrounded by people who don't know who you really are, but you can put a presentation on of who you want them to think you are.

    18:08-18:09

Is that what you're going for?

    18:11-18:12

    I want the real thing.

    18:12-18:13

    How about you?

    18:13-18:15

    I want the real thing.

    18:21-18:25

We are not going for, you know, I just want to be a little more moral than Joe Pagan.

    18:25-18:26

    You know Joe Pagan?

    18:28-18:29

I just want to be a little more moral than him.

    18:32-18:33

    We're not going for that.

    18:34-18:40

Nor are we going for, Well, my life is Christian-ish.

    18:43-18:44

    Look at your life.

    18:47-18:48

    It is Christian-ish.

    18:50-18:52

Diet Christian, I think you would call it.

    18:54-18:55

    Christian-lite.

    18:57-19:00

That's not what we're going for. What does it say we need to seek after?

    19:00-19:05

We are seeking after the very values of heaven itself.

    19:06-19:08

    The very values of heaven.

    19:13-19:14

What are the values of heaven?

    19:18-19:24

I suggest to you that the fruit of the Holy Spirit are the values of heaven.

    19:25-19:29

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    19:30-19:31

    Those are values of heaven.

    19:35-19:37

And those are the values we're going to seek after.

    19:39-19:40

    By walking in the Spirit.

    19:41-19:55

You might be sitting here this morning saying, "You know, I haven't been there in a long time." "I just, I haven't been there in a long time." I hear what you're saying, but it's been a long time since I've really, really been seeking after things in heaven.

    19:55-19:58

I've kind of been going to church for a while, and I've kind of been...

    19:59-20:02

I just really haven't been pursuing the Lord like I need to.

    20:02-20:05

Is there anybody here? Don't raise your hand. Is there anybody here that can say that?

    20:06-20:09

I have not been pursuing the Lord in my life like I should have.

    20:13-20:16

Here's the great thing. You can get back to that place right now.

    20:18-20:24

It's as easy as stop seeking what you have been and seek instead the things of Christ.

    20:27-20:31

I already told you it's not about trying harder, it's about yielding more.

    20:31-20:32

    It's about trusting more.

    20:35-20:38

It's about getting on your knees and just being real with God.

    20:38-20:39

When was the last time you did that?

    20:41-20:45

When was the last time you got on your knees and you were just real with God?

    20:45-20:49

Not "God bless grandma and grandpa, amen." I'm talking about being real with God.

    20:49-20:57

"God, I am struggling here." "God, why don't I hunger for you like I should?" Why don't I have a desire to pray like I should?

    20:59-21:01

God, why am I not pursuing you passionately?

    21:01-21:03

When's the last time you did that?

    21:06-21:08

Get down and get to that place.

    21:10-21:11

    God can handle it.

    21:12-21:16

You know, let's can the, you know, pre-scripted prayers.

    21:17-21:19

And let's just get real with God.

    21:20-21:31

And say, "God, I need you, and lately I haven't been acting like that." I believe in you God, I believe in Jesus Christ, but my life hasn't been consistent with that.

    21:31-21:34

    Get real! Get seeking!

    21:36-21:40

Listen, this isn't seeking seminars. This is what a lot of Christians do.

    21:40-21:43

I need to get back to Tractor. I'm going to go to the seminar. We have this conference coming up.

    21:44-21:47

Hopefully if I go to the office, they say they'll bring me back to Tractor.

    21:47-21:52

You know, someone has a new book out. Maybe if I read that a few times, that'll get me back to Tractor.

    21:52-21:54

All those things are good, but all those things have their places.

    21:54-21:57

But those things are not seeking Jesus Christ.

    21:57-22:02

Those things are not seeking the things of heaven.

    22:04-22:07

All good resources, but seeking the things of heaven.

    22:11-22:15

Let's not seek things about the Lord, we're seeking the Lord Himself.

    22:16-22:17

So do you want to grow spiritually?

    22:18-22:19

Or how do you grow spiritually?

    22:19-22:22

Spiritual growth only happens when my pursuit is Christ.

    22:24-22:28

You see, this passage is continuing on from the sermon last week, I understand that.

    22:29-22:34

Paul wasn't like, okay, here's a sermon, completely different thought, here's a sermon, completely different thought, here's a sermon.

    22:35-22:38

This is a letter that he wrote to a church, so there's a flow of thought.

    22:38-22:44

And he's saying you're not gonna grow spiritually through all this religious, mystical, self-denial stuff.

    22:44-22:45

Do you wanna grow in the Lord?

    22:46-22:46

    Here's how you do it.

    22:48-22:50

And all true believers do want to grow in the Lord.

    22:50-22:55

If you're sitting here this morning and you're saying, "I don't quite want to, I don't feel like growing in the Lord," then you probably don't know the Lord.

    22:59-23:01

Be very spiritually when your pursuit is Christ.

    23:03-23:05

Secondly, when my thoughts are on Christ.

    23:05-23:06

    Look at verse 2.

    23:06-23:07

When my thoughts are on Christ.

    23:08-23:13

Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

    23:15-23:16

    Set your minds.

    23:16-23:18

Literally in the Greek that just means thick.

    23:19-23:21

Okay? It just means thick. That's what it means.

    23:21-23:25

We are thinking about things in heaven. We're thinking about heaven.

    23:28-23:33

    What's God about? What's God's character? What's God's holiness like?

    23:35-23:40

What fires are going on? It's just thinking about the things above.

    23:41-23:43

Question. Where do we get that information?

    23:44-23:45

you're supposed to think about heaven.

    23:46-23:51

Okay, can you tell me like a resource where I can find similar things out about heaven so I can be thinking about them?

    23:52-23:56

Church, show us where the resources are to find out about heaven.

    23:57-23:58

    Right, it's right here.

    24:00-24:01

    Isn't that great?

    24:01-24:03

God like wrote it down for us.

    24:04-24:05

You wanna know what heaven's like?

    24:05-24:06

Here, let me write it down.

    24:06-24:07

Just read it, just read it.

    24:08-24:09

    You wanna think about heaven.

    24:09-24:12

See, that's why we're so excited about this book.

    24:13-24:17

That's why when we talk about our four pillars, proclaiming the authority of God's word without apology.

    24:18-24:21

God's not sorry he said some things, so why should I be?

    24:24-24:25

God says here it all is.

    24:26-24:28

And when I don't have insight, read about it.

    24:29-24:30

    It's all in here.

    24:31-24:32

    Get this in your mind.

    24:33-24:34

    Get into work.

    24:36-24:47

See, Jesus Christ's presence in you is that the person of the Holy Spirit, but understand this, the Holy Spirit works in conjunction with God's work, and it's so important.

    24:48-24:52

The Holy Spirit is not going to tell you something that's contrary to God's work.

    24:52-24:53

    He will not do that.

    24:54-24:56

    He's not gonna contradict himself.

    24:59-25:05

See, it's not just knowing the Bible, it's knowing God.

    25:06-25:07

You know what I mean by that?

    25:09-25:11

    It's knowing God.

    25:13-25:16

That's just like, why do some things about the Bible and have great forms of it?

    25:18-25:18

    It's...

    25:18-25:21

    I don't want to. I don't.

    25:24-25:26

It's dangerous to know the Bible and to not embrace it.

    25:29-25:33

He says, put your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are near.

    25:35-25:37

Some people live their entire existence like that.

    25:38-25:39

    This is all there is.

    25:39-25:40

    This is it.

    25:40-25:41

    This is it.

    25:41-25:42

You live for a few years, you die.

    25:43-25:44

    You're mortal food.

    25:44-25:44

    End of story.

    25:45-25:49

And they live like this Earth is the sum total of existence.

    25:52-25:54

Don't put your mind on the things that are on the Earth.

    25:55-26:00

How much time do people think about-- let me give you a little list here-- putting their mind on their job.

    26:02-26:04

They're thinking about the job, thinking about the job, thinking about the job.

    26:04-26:09

And they go home, and they're with their wife and kids, I'm thinking about the job, I just can't turn it off.

    26:11-26:12

    That's where your mind is.

    26:13-26:19

I'm thinking about money, if only I had more money, if only, you know, if we make more money, I can buy this or I can have that.

    26:20-26:22

There's so much retirement, I just can't wait.

    26:22-26:28

Counting down the days, I saw a guy on Facebook last week that said 29 years and six months until I can retire.

    26:29-26:30

    Wow.

    26:32-26:32

    True.

    26:34-26:36

It could be a car, it could be a boat, it could be a hobby.

    26:37-26:39

There's nothing inherently wrong with those things.

    26:40-26:42

But the question is what dominates your mind?

    26:43-26:49

Understanding that whatever dominates your mind is going to determine what kind of person you are.

    26:50-26:51

    You know, believe me.

    26:54-26:59

Well, if your mind is constantly thinking about lustful thoughts.

    27:00-27:10

You're looking at images that incite lust in you, and you're looking at all these things that stir up that lust within you, and you're thinking about that.

    27:11-27:16

You can't even look at a person of the opposite sex without a lustful thought.

    27:16-27:18

What kind of person is that?

    27:19-27:20

    It's a lustful person!

    27:21-27:23

I think, constantly stirring around in the mind.

    27:25-27:32

For a covetous person, some people walk around life always thinking everything's unfair because I didn't get what the next guy got.

    27:32-27:33

    You know somebody like that?

    27:35-27:36

    It's constant.

    27:37-27:38

    They can be anywhere.

    27:39-27:46

You know, they sit down at dinner and, you know, why didn't he get the better steak than I did?

    27:46-27:48

You know, his cake is a little bit bigger than mine.

    27:48-27:51

You know, why is everything always so unfair to me?

    27:51-27:52

    And they're constant.

    27:52-27:53

    They just walk through life.

    27:53-27:59

I'm being sold short on things, I'm being shortchanged on things.

    28:00-28:03

Some people spend their whole lives being caught with lies.

    28:05-28:07

That's what's always going through their mind.

    28:07-28:09

I want to do these things, but I'm not going to do it.

    28:09-28:16

I have to give a good story for my wife, so I make up this web of intricate lies.

    28:16-28:19

And some people lie where the truth would fit better.

    28:19-28:22

constantly gut them through their mind.

    28:22-28:23

How can I deceive this person?

    28:24-28:29

I can justify this lie in a sense, because technically that might be true.

    28:31-28:32

    It's a liar.

    28:34-28:40

Hatred. Some people, like Pastor James said in the video, some people just walk through life.

    28:42-28:47

Here's what I don't like about him, and here's what I don't like about her, and you don't really fix me up about him.

    28:48-28:57

Just constantly, that hatred, there's hatred, hateful thoughts, excuse me, just constantly swirling through the mind makes for a, what kind of person?

    28:57-28:58

    A hateful person.

    29:01-29:02

Did you ever meet a hateful person?

    29:04-29:05

Gosh, get me out of here.

    29:06-29:06

    Right?

    29:07-29:09

Or complaining along the same lines.

    29:14-29:15

I think I met the champion.

    29:17-29:24

bitterness. Again, the same line. Some people just...life's always going to be a raw deal.

    29:25-29:30

Nothing's ever fair, nothing's ever right. I'm angry, I'm angry at this circumstance, I'm angry at this person.

    29:33-29:39

If your mind is always in one of these areas, or maybe more than one of these areas, it's no wonder you're not growing as a believer.

    29:39-29:42

If you are a believer, if that...if that...

    29:44-29:47

You want to grow in the Lord, you're going to get your mind off these things in the earth.

    29:47-29:48

    Get your mind in heaven.

    29:49-29:51

Look at your outline, Reverend 12.2.

    29:52-29:55

Do not be conformed to this world.

    29:56-29:58

Do you know why you have these thoughts of lust and hate and blame?

    29:58-30:00

Because that's what the world does.

    30:00-30:05

And when you're going along with the flow of the world, you're just going to start acting like the rest of them.

    30:06-30:13

And Paul says, "Don't be conformed to the world, but be what?" be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

    30:13-30:15

Only Jesus Christ can do that.

    30:17-30:21

This is seeing people, events, and circumstances from God's point of view.

    30:22-30:23

    I'll say that again.

    30:25-30:29

This is seeing people, events, and circumstances from God's point of view.

    30:30-30:43

The more you learn to do that, the more you are going to understand and experience I'm a very subjective level what it means to walk in the victory of the Lord.

    30:46-30:50

    This isn't a prosperity message. I'm not saying life isn't a pedore.

    30:50-31:02

What I'm saying is, even when you can see the absolute worst circumstances in your life, from the point of view of a sovereign God, you're still going to walk in joy on the worst day of your life.

    31:04-31:13

Knowing that God is in control and God has a purpose and God never does anything in return.

    31:19-31:23

Forgiveness comes a lot easier when you look at it from Heaven's point of view, doesn't it?

    31:24-31:26

    Doesn't forgiveness come easier?

    31:29-31:32

I've heard people say, "I'll never forgive that person for what they did." Really?

    31:35-31:41

If you consider what the Lord has forgiven you, how many times do you think you've sinned against the Lord?

    31:41-31:42

    How many times?

    31:43-31:45

Millions? Billions? Trillions? Some of us?

    31:47-31:49

Me, I'm probably whatever is above trillions.

    31:50-31:56

And the Lord, God, and Jesus Christ, and I'm going to forgive the whole record.

    31:56-31:59

And then we find somebody that sits against us one time.

    31:59-32:00

I'll never forgive you for that.

    32:01-32:02

Your body's not in heaven, man.

    32:03-32:05

    Because if it were...

    32:07-32:08

    If it was...

    32:11-32:13

    Forgiveness would be natural.

    32:13-32:15

I forgive because God has forgiven me.

    32:16-32:18

It's a natural outflow of the life of Christ.

    32:21-32:23

Sin is not so attractive when you see it from heaven.

    32:24-32:29

You know, that sin is not so attractive, you see, from a heavenly point of view.

    32:30-32:37

"Oh, sinless, grieve the heart of the Lord." You know, and you see, even his people making stupid choices.

    32:41-32:44

Scripture paints the picture so perfectly.

    32:45-32:55

You know, the psalm saying, I believe Peter quotes it when he says, "It's like a dog returning to its mom." That's a fool, that's a sinner returning to that fallen.

    32:56-32:58

That's a gross picture, but that is so appropriate.

    33:00-33:05

When we're in the middle of sin, it's so enticing, it looks so good, and it's so attractive, and it's so fun.

    33:07-33:11

If you look at your sin from God's perspective, you know what God sees?

    33:11-33:14

He sees a dog that just threw up and is going back to eat it.

    33:14-33:15

    That's disgusting.

    33:16-33:18

That is the Godless part of the picture, according to God's picture.

    33:21-33:23

This is not so attractive, but we see it from heaven.

    33:24-33:26

Philippians 4 gives you some things to think about.

    33:27-33:29

You can read that in your outline.

    33:29-33:30

    You can't be a Bible.

    33:31-33:32

That's what we've been talking about.

    33:34-33:43

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is bodily, whatever is dependable, if there's any excellence, anything worthy of grace, think about these things.

    33:45-33:47

If your mind didn't wonder yet, did it?

    33:55-34:02

I heard somebody say one time that I shouldn't let my mind wander because it's so little I get lost.

    34:05-34:06

I found my friend in that last one.

    34:07-34:08

    Number three.

    34:09-34:10

    Play verse three.

    34:11-34:12

So how does real growth happen?

    34:12-34:15

When my pursuit is Christ, when my thoughts are on Christ.

    34:15-34:17

Number three, when my identity is Christ.

    34:19-34:21

Verses three and four just go together.

    34:21-34:22

They're two sides of a coin.

    34:22-34:24

So we're going to get through these much quicker.

    34:25-34:25

    Verses three and four.

    34:26-34:34

"For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God." Number three, when my identity is Christ.

    34:35-34:36

    You have died.

    34:36-34:38

We spend a lot of time talking about that.

    34:38-34:41

Jesus didn't come into the world to turn bad people into good people.

    34:41-34:43

He came into the world to do what?

    34:43-34:47

Turn dead people into alive people.

    34:48-34:48

    He talks about that.

    34:48-34:51

    2.13, you have died.

    34:51-34:52

    We've been raised with Christ.

    34:56-34:56

    Identifying with Christ.

    34:56-34:57

That's what he reminds us here.

    34:57-34:58

    He says, you died.

    35:00-35:00

    You died.

    35:03-35:10

Now, when we identify with Christ, it is true that we are alive to Christ, but the other side of that is, we are also dead to sin.

    35:11-35:16

That's so important, Because that's what the whole next section is about, what we'll be looking at next week, when we're willing.

    35:19-35:22

"Lie to Christ, then to sin." What does this mean?

    35:22-35:26

He says, "Your life is hidden with Christ and God." What in the world does that mean?

    35:27-35:34

Well, there's a sense in which your new life is concealed from the world.

    35:37-35:39

Ephesians 2.6, I have that on your outline, I believe.

    35:39-35:44

God raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

    35:45-35:57

This life of yours, you are a possessor of eternal life, but somehow there is a sense in which that life is hidden in Christ.

    36:00-36:02

    Concealed from the world.

    36:03-36:06

That's why when you come to Christ outwardly you don't look any different.

    36:07-36:17

That's why I think of somebody here that said, "You know, I came to Christ and my family just kind of rolled their eyes at me, and they thought, 'Oh, no, he's a religious nut.'" And they don't understand. Anybody here who can testify to that?

    36:18-36:25

"My family didn't understand that Christ had changed me." Your life is concealed. It's hidden.

    36:27-36:27

    In Christ.

    36:31-36:37

Over and over and over and over in the New Testament, we're reminded that we are citizens of heaven.

    36:38-36:42

So when you want to grow spiritually, it's all about your identity.

    36:44-36:47

And your identity is this, you're a citizen of heaven.

    36:50-36:52

You're a citizen of heaven, think of it this way.

    36:52-36:56

Back in 1896, I went on a mission trip to Thailand.

    37:00-37:02

You think I stood out a little bit in Thailand.

    37:05-37:09

I'm a big, chubby, pale, blonde guy.

    37:11-37:12

Yeah, I stood out a little bit.

    37:13-37:14

Don't laugh at me, I stood out.

    37:14-37:15

    I stood out.

    37:18-37:23

Well, when I was in Thailand, I didn't speak Thai.

    37:25-37:28

I wasn't good at their games.

    37:28-37:32

I was trying to play these games with the kids, and I completely stunk at them.

    37:35-37:39

And there were just a lot of times when I was in Thailand that I acted like an American.

    37:39-37:40

Do you know why that is?

    37:42-37:42

    Do you know why?

    37:43-37:48

Do you know why there were times, most times, when I was in Thailand, do you know why I acted like an American?

    37:48-37:49

    Do you know?

    37:50-37:51

    Take a guess.

    37:52-37:54

    Because I'm an American, right!

    37:55-37:58

Right. I was there, but I wasn't really from there. I didn't really belong there.

    37:59-38:00

    I'm an American.

    38:01-38:08

They carried this little thing around with me, this passport, that reminded me that I'm American.

    38:09-38:15

And understand that, Carol, there's a sense in which, yeah, we're kind of here in the world, but our citizenship isn't in the world.

    38:17-38:21

Sometimes we don't act like the world, we shouldn't act like the world at any time.

    38:23-38:27

But when we don't act like the world, it's because, you know, we don't really come around here.

    38:27-38:29

    Our citizenship is in heaven.

    38:33-38:35

    Our citizenship is in heaven.

    38:38-38:41

How you identify yourself will define how you think.

    38:42-38:45

How you identify yourself will define how you think.

    38:46-38:56

I was reading some stories this past week about some actors, Hollywood actors, that got so wrapped up in the role that they were doing.

    38:56-38:57

Have you ever heard about this?

    38:58-39:05

They get so wrapped up in the role that it messes with their mind.

    39:07-39:09

    For example, Heath Ledger.

    39:09-39:10

    Anybody see The Dark Knight?

    39:11-39:12

    Dark Knight?

    39:13-39:14

A few people will admit that, I saw that.

    39:17-39:27

Well, they say that Heath Ledger was so wrapped up in that Joker character, he was sort of this malignant, bad guy, he was so wrapped up in that character that he couldn't sleep.

    39:27-39:34

It was like really, in his personal life, it wasn't like wipe the makeup off, go home and back to business.

    39:34-39:44

They said that he was so wrapped up in that, that some people speculate that's why he had taken so many sleeping pills, because he just couldn't sleep.

    39:44-39:49

It was making him crazy, portraying a crazy person.

    39:50-39:55

I read the same thing about Anthony Hopkins, were preserved in the Hopkins, I guess.

    39:57-40:01

But when he was playing Hannibal Lecter, they said that it was messing with his mind.

    40:02-40:04

    Why did that happen?

    40:04-40:12

They got in this mindset that they were identifying themselves as something and they started to act like what they identified themselves as.

    40:15-40:19

A few years ago, somebody loaned me the autobiography of Ted DiBiase.

    40:19-40:20

How many people heard of Ted DiBiase?

    40:22-40:25

Ted DiBiase was a professional wrestler. He was known as the...

    40:27-40:29

A million dollar man, Ted DiBiase.

    40:31-40:35

Well, in his biography, he talks about how he came to Christ.

    40:36-40:39

Well, part of that path was...

    40:40-40:48

When he went into wrestling, the persona that he was portraying was that of a stuck-up, filthy, rich, oppressive type guy.

    40:49-40:56

So they actually gave him a lot of money and said, live lavishly, get into your character, live lavishly.

    40:56-40:58

Here's money, here's money, just go live lavishly.

    40:58-41:02

Best cars, best hotels, get into this character, get into this character, get into this character.

    41:02-41:03

And guess what happened to him?

    41:04-41:06

He got into the character and he couldn't turn it off.

    41:07-41:09

He started to think, I'm the million dollar man, I'm the million dollar man.

    41:09-41:15

And it took the intervention of Jesus Christ to remind him who he was.

    41:16-41:21

How you identify yourself, that's how you define how you think.

    41:21-41:31

So listen, if you're constantly reminding yourself, "I am a child of God. I am a follower of Jesus Christ.

    41:31-41:36

I have been born again, and I am dead to sin, and I have been made alive in Christ.

    41:36-41:44

That's who I am." That will define how you think, and how you think will define how you think.

    41:46-41:51

It's not rules. It's life. The life of Christ.

    41:55-41:59

Last one. How many of you are spiritually involved?

    41:59-42:06

When I pursue Christ, when my thoughts are on Christ, when my identity is in Christ, verse 4, when my hope is in Christ.

    42:06-42:08

    My hope is in Christ.

    42:08-42:08

    Verse 4.

    42:10-42:16

When Christ, who is your life, I have that highlighted in my Bible.

    42:17-42:21

If I find that it is not highlighted in your Bible, I will take your Bible.

    42:22-42:29

Christ, who is your life, appears that you also will appear with Him in glory.

    42:29-42:32

Jesus Christ does not just give life, He is life.

    42:32-42:33

    Check this out.

    42:34-42:41

"We will appear with Him in glory." This is the flip side of the previous verse.

    42:41-42:45

As I said, in a sense, our new life is hidden in Christ, concealed from the world.

    42:45-42:51

But there is going to come a day when Jesus Christ is going to return, and nothing is going to be concealed from the world.

    42:52-42:57

Jesus Christ is going to say, "She is mine.

    42:58-43:06

He belongs to me." to be a revelation of Christ's people to the world.

    43:10-43:12

This is a whole other study.

    43:13-43:15

I've got a couple verses for you on that.

    43:15-43:48

1 John 3, 2 "Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared, but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is." Again, Romans 8, 19, "For the creation which with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God pulses the whole creation's like waiting for this, waiting for this, waiting for this." There's going to come a day that Jesus is going to come back and say, "Here's my people." The final verdict is going to be handed down.

    43:49-43:50

    Who belongs to Jesus?

    43:50-43:51

    Who doesn't belong to Jesus?

    43:52-43:52

    Who's real?

    43:52-44:00

Jesus is going to be there when he's going to say, "Here's my people." Here they are. Revealing them to the world.

    44:03-44:40

Right now, Sunday morning in Partners Bible Chapel, we are saying, "I am Christ." There's going to come a day that Jesus is going to come back and say, "He is mine." He's going to come back and He's going to say, "She is mine." Now, our life is hidden with grace and in the future we will appear with it.

    44:43-44:45

At the end of the day, it's all about identity.

    44:47-44:48

    We took a poll.

    44:49-44:51

Who here wants to sin less?

    44:52-45:00

Everybody in here is like, "I do." Who here wants to grow in your walk with the Lord?

    45:01-45:01

    Me!

    45:04-45:06

Who here wants to be fruitful in ministry?

    45:07-45:09

Every one of us would want that.

    45:11-45:14

It comes down to knowing who you are with Christ.

    45:17-45:18

    Making that effort soon.

    45:20-45:21

    Making that promise.

    45:23-45:24

    You got your message there.

    45:34-45:44

Father, when we really stop and look at your Word, we are overwhelmed at your grace.

    45:48-45:54

You didn't just forgive us, which would have been way more than we deserve anyway.

    45:56-45:59

You forgive us, you cleanse us, you change us, you transform us.

    46:02-46:17

And to think that your desire is to bless us, and the blessing comes from experiencing the life of Christ in us.

    46:22-46:23

    Father, I want to grow.

    46:27-46:30

And I know that surround my brothers and sisters here who are saying the same thing.

    46:30-46:30

    I want to grow.

    46:36-46:40

Renewing us a passion to pursue Christ.

    46:43-46:48

Renewing us a mindset where we're thinking about heaven.

    46:49-46:51

    Your values, your desires.

    46:57-47:00

Remind us of our identity, we have a tendency to get away from it.

    47:02-47:08

Bring us back to the place of growth, that we're not just fixated on the here and now.

    47:12-47:14

But instead we are looking forward.

    47:17-47:37

To that glorious day when Christ appears, and by His grace, will gloriously put His people on display before the world, and say, "These are the people that I've redeemed.

    47:39-47:45

These are the people whom I've called out in the world, whom I love.

    47:52-47:52

    Thank you, Father.

    47:57-48:00

In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, Amen.
