I'm excited to get into God's Word with us today.

    00:02-00:03

So you have your Bibles with you?

    00:04-00:09

Here at Harvest Bible Chapel we believe in proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    00:11-00:32

The last couple of years we've been walking through the Gospel of Mark and we finished up our series last week on "I Love to Give." This week we begin our series "He is the Lamb." Last fall we talked about "He is the Lord" and we saw Jesus' authority in His various interactions with people during the last week of his life.

    00:33-00:38

And this stretch will actually take us through Easter as we talk about this glorious truth.

    00:38-00:40

It's all building up to this, he is the lamb.

    00:41-00:44

Open up to Mark chapter 14 and bow your heads with me, please.

    00:45-00:47

Father in heaven, we're just about to turn to your word.

    00:48-00:53

And Father, you know, as people, we are very easily distracted.

    00:54-01:08

We've all come in here with, whether we're dealing with illnesses or heartaches or stresses at work that we can't seem to let go of that we know we're going to have to face tomorrow.

    01:10-01:24

I pray, Father, that by the power of Your Holy Spirit within, that You would remove any distraction from us so that as we get into Your Word right now, we would allow Your Word to penetrate deep into our hearts.

    01:25-01:30

Father, we know that when we encounter Your Word, we are never the same.

    01:31-01:33

Your Word has a way of changing us.

    01:33-01:38

Your Holy Spirit has a way of working with Your Word to increase our faith.

    01:40-01:42

Your Word tells us that faith comes by hearing.

    01:43-01:53

God, that's why we get into Your Word so that by hearing Your Word and by understanding Your Word and by applying Your Word, So we want to know You more.

    01:57-02:04

I pray as we start this journey now, You would give us understanding what it really means that Jesus Christ is the Lamb.

    02:06-02:08

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

    02:11-02:13

    Mark 14 - just a quick review.

    02:13-02:16

Last fall, we looked at Mark 11, 12, and 13.

    02:17-02:20

And we saw Jesus' triumphal entry.

    02:20-02:23

That was Jesus' announcement He was the Messiah.

    02:24-02:32

And everybody knew exactly what he was announcing, okay, because this was ramping up the desire of people to kill Jesus.

    02:33-02:36

He was making a proclamation that he was the Messiah of Israel.

    02:37-02:44

And then we saw throughout those chapters people challenging Jesus and wanting to try to make Jesus look stupid.

    02:45-02:46

And they were constantly asking Him questions.

    02:47-02:48

    Should we pay taxes?

    02:48-02:52

and, "Ok, so what if this woman marries these seven guys and they all die?

    02:53-02:57

Who's going to have her in the resurrection?" They were always asking these ridiculous questions.

    02:57-03:03

And Jesus in His wisdom and in His authority, because He is the Lord, handled them all.

    03:04-03:06

We left Mark, we were in Mark chapter 13.

    03:07-03:10

Jesus gave us the ultimate spoiler alert.

    03:10-03:13

He said, "This is how the world will end." And He walked us through history.

    03:14-03:30

He said, "Here's how the world ends." When we get to Mark chapter 14, on your outline, it just says "planning a murder." And in the first two verses in Mark chapter 14, that's what's happening is there are people planning a murder.

    03:32-03:39

It says, "It was now two days before the Passover." And when was the Passover?

    03:39-03:42

That would have been Friday, so okay, we're talking about Wednesday.

    03:43-03:48

It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

    03:50-03:52

    Israel had three major feasts.

    03:53-03:59

And there was the Feast of Pentecost and the Feast of Booths, but this was the granddaddy.

    03:59-04:00

    This was the ultimate.

    04:01-04:10

The Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, these were Israel's biggest holidays and both of these events actually commemorated the Exodus.

    04:10-04:26

They were remembering when Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and the angel of death would pass over the Israelites who were obedient to sprinkle the blood of a spotless lamb on their doorposts.

    04:26-04:32

That's the Passover, then the unleavened bread to commemorate the haste in which they left Egypt.

    04:33-04:34

So this was a seven-day holiday.

    04:35-04:41

And that's, Mark's giving us the context here, it was now two days before the Passover and the beast of unleavened bread.

    04:42-04:51

And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest Him by stealth.

    04:52-04:57

So the religious leaders, it says, the chief priests and the scribes, wanted to arrest Jesus by stealth.

    04:57-05:00

And the word "stealth" is an interesting word in the Greek.

    05:00-05:07

It can also be translated "fish hook." They wanted to trick Jesus into getting arrested.

    05:09-05:11

The same way somebody tricks a fish.

    05:12-05:15

When you think about it, fishing is extremely cruel.

    05:16-05:19

From the fish's perspective, the fish is just kind of swimming along.

    05:19-05:21

    I see Ben smirking.

    05:21-05:22

    You're a fisherman, right?

    05:22-05:26

And the fish is just kind of swimming along, and all of a sudden, there's a hamburger!

    05:26-05:30

And he's like, "I don't know who this is, but it's mine now." And he takes a bite and...

    05:31-05:32

    Hook in the head.

    05:33-05:34

    Ok, that's cruel.

    05:35-05:36

    Everybody say that's cruel.

    05:38-05:38

    Two of you said it.

    05:40-05:41

The rest of you are fishermen.

    05:42-05:44

    I have nothing against fishermen.

    05:44-05:45

    I really don't.

    05:47-05:49

But that's the sense of this word.

    05:49-05:51

They wanted to arrest Jesus by stealth.

    05:51-05:52

    They wanted to trick Him.

    05:53-05:57

They wanted to sneakily arrest Him.

    05:58-05:59

    But not just arrest Him.

    05:59-06:00

Do you notice what else it says?

    06:00-06:02

They're seeking how to arrest Him by stealth.

    06:03-06:05

Kind of under the radar kind of thing.

    06:05-06:05

    And kill Him!

    06:07-06:21

Verse 2 says, "For they said, 'Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.'" Okay, so not during the feast.

    06:22-06:30

Okay, there were countless thousands and tens of thousands, even upwards of hundreds of thousands of people that came to Jerusalem for the feast.

    06:31-06:35

Okay, everybody came to celebrate the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread.

    06:36-06:45

Okay, so if you can imagine Jerusalem as just people on top of people on top of people, and they said, "Well, we want to, we got to kill this guy.

    06:48-06:56

The last thing we want to do is do it during the feast because there's all these people here and if you remember Jesus' track record, he was quite popular.

    06:56-07:01

He would show up in the town and he would heal people and he would teach people and people loved Jesus.

    07:02-07:10

And they said, "With all these people here, there's going to be thousands of Jesus fans, so we've got to get rid of this guy.

    07:11-07:12

    He's ruining our business.

    07:14-07:19

He's getting quite a following, but we cannot do it during the feast.

    07:20-07:22

John Q. Public just likes him too much.

    07:23-07:29

So let's do this, but anytime during the feast, anytime at all, anytime but during the feast.

    07:31-07:32

    but during the feast.

    07:32-07:34

So let me ask you, when was Jesus crucified?

    07:36-07:39

He was crucified during the feast.

    07:41-07:41

    Why?

    07:42-07:50

Because even though these men were plotting his death, understand that God was the one who was really preparing everything.

    07:52-08:01

His son, the Lamb of God, was to be sacrificed on Passover because God the Father was going to offer God the Son as a sin offering.

    08:04-08:20

So understand these verses here in the beginning of chapter 14, there's a sense of irony here, and that these people wanted to kill Jesus anytime but to feast, but God the Father says, "No, it has to happen during Passover." Because from God's perspective, this wasn't His Son being grabbed and murdered.

    08:21-08:33

From God's perspective, it was, "I'm allowing my Son to lay down His life as a sacrifice, and that has to happen during Passover." I don't care how much these people say it can't happen during Passover.

    08:34-08:38

God says it will happen over Passover because this is my plan.

    08:38-08:40

God says I've always had this plan.

    08:40-08:44

My calendar says this is when my son is going to die.

    08:46-08:54

And it is so important for us to understand that because there are some people that think that Jesus was a victim of circumstance.

    08:55-08:57

I'll never forget one time we were just doing some street evangelism.

    08:57-08:59

It was me and Grandma Barb.

    09:00-09:06

And we met this lady who said, she got very, we were talking to her about Jesus and she got very sad.

    09:06-09:33

And she said, "You know, the worst thing "that ever happened in history was they got him." We're like, "What do you mean they got him?" She said, "They killed Jesus "and he was doing so much good and they got him." I'm like, "What are you talking about?" She says, "Oh, if only they hadn't killed Jesus, if only they hadn't got him and crucified him and he was able to continue to live and to teach, if only...

    09:33-09:35

She was really broken up about it.

    09:35-09:40

She says they got him and nothing really has ever been the same since they killed Jesus.

    09:42-09:46

And you see, she didn't understand the scripture says this was God's plan.

    09:47-09:51

Man was plotting, but God was planning.

    09:52-09:53

This was the very purpose for which he came.

    09:54-09:54

    What did we see already?

    09:55-09:59

Three or four times in Mark, Jesus said that he was going to die.

    10:02-10:05

So while these men were plotting, God was planning.

    10:06-10:17

So we move from people plotting his death to someone doing unto Jesus what he called a beautiful thing.

    10:17-10:23

Now, verses three through nine in your Bible, just right in the margin in your Bible beside Verse 3, right toward flashback.

    10:24-10:27

Okay, understand that this isn't chronological.

    10:28-10:30

The verses 3 through 9 are a flashback.

    10:31-10:32

Like, well, how do you know that?

    10:33-10:41

Because John chapter 12 and verse 1 says that this event that we're going to talk about actually happened six days before the Passover.

    10:43-10:47

So Mark, for the purpose of his writing, was giving a flashback.

    10:47-10:48

You've seen that in movies, right?

    10:49-11:00

Like something's happening, the plot's moving along, and then all of a sudden there's like the wavy lines or there's this like black and white flashback scene to show you something because it's relevant to what's coming next.

    11:00-11:02

And that's kind of what Mark's doing here.

    11:02-11:09

Like the action's moving along, moving along, it's Wednesday, and then they're like, flashback, let's go back to last Saturday.

    11:09-11:13

Let me tell you something that happened there because this is significant to what's about to happen.

    11:14-11:14

    Everybody with me?

    11:15-11:16

    This is a flashback.

    11:18-11:20

    It happened the Saturday before.

    11:21-11:25

It says, "And while he was at Bethany..." Remember, Jesus stayed at Bethany.

    11:25-11:28

That was in the suburbs of Jerusalem.

    11:28-11:29

    Jesus had some friends there.

    11:31-11:33

    Mary, Martha, and Lazarus.

    11:33-11:34

    Two sisters and a brother.

    11:35-11:36

    That was their hometown.

    11:36-11:38

    And Jesus stayed with them.

    11:39-11:52

It says, "And while he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper..." I'd just like to insert here, that that is a really bummer of a nickname.

    11:55-11:55

    Honestly.

    11:56-11:58

I mean, there were a lot of people named Simon.

    11:59-11:59

    There were.

    11:59-11:59

    There were a ton.

    11:59-12:03

You read through your Bible, there were a lot of people named Simon.

    12:04-13:08

And as Mark was describing this scene, I don't know, I kind of imagine that, you know, people say that Peter gave Mark his information for the gospel. So Peter's like, "Yeah, we were at Simon's house." Like, which Simon? Well, Simon Bar-Jonah, Simon son of John, that was Peter. "Your house, Peter?" "No, it wasn't my house. It was it was another Simon's house." "Well, which Simon was it?" "It was Simon the leper." Actually, in the Greek, it could also be translated, you can look this up, but this is stuff that kind of makes me chuckle, it can be translated "scaly." Simon the Scaly, because leprosy made your skin fall off, and they called this guy Simon the Scaly, or Scaly Simon. So we were, Peter's like, "Yeah, we were at Scaly Simon's house." And that's something you might miss if you just gloss over this. I think this stuff's kind of funny. We were Scaly Simon's house. Obviously, Simon didn't have leprosy anymore, otherwise people, if you had leprosy, people weren't at your house, right?

    13:08-13:11

Well, people weren't at your house for Thanksgiving if you had leprosy.

    13:11-13:12

It's like, we're not going there.

    13:13-13:14

    We're having Thanksgiving somewhere else.

    13:14-13:17

But he was obviously healed, but that's why this is such a bummer.

    13:17-13:18

    The nickname stuck.

    13:19-13:24

It'd be like, you know, Kate had the mumps last month, but we don't still call him mumpsie.

    13:25-13:28

But this name stuck for Scaly Simon.

    13:30-13:30

    Bummer.

    13:33-13:40

So they were at Simon the leper's house, and it said, "And he was reclining at table." Understand, they didn't use chairs and tables like we do.

    13:40-13:49

Their tables would have been very low to the ground, and they would have had pillows and cushions, and when they would sit to eat, they would actually lean on a pillow and recline like that.

    13:50-14:00

So that's why it says, "He was reclining at table." It says, "A woman came with an alabaster flask "of ointment of pure nard." Like, who's the woman?

    14:01-14:01

    Well, it's Mary.

    14:02-14:04

John tells us that in John chapter 12.

    14:04-14:08

Mary, sister of Lazarus and Martha.

    14:09-14:13

So she came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly.

    14:15-14:16

    What is nard?

    14:19-14:22

Well, nard is a perfume from an Indian plant.

    14:24-14:28

Some Bibles say spike nard because the plant actually looks like spikes.

    14:29-14:36

But it was a perfume that came from that plant And notice, he says it was pure or undiluted.

    14:38-14:40

So this stuff was very expensive.

    14:41-14:49

She didn't bring out the Brut by Fabergé, you know, the $2 at Target cologne.

    14:50-14:52

She brought out this stuff that we're going to see.

    14:54-14:57

It was probably more expensive than any perfume you have at your house.

    15:01-15:02

And what did she do with it?

    15:02-15:10

It says, "She broke the flask and poured it over his head." That was a custom.

    15:11-15:15

When people would come and visit, you would anoint them.

    15:15-15:19

You know, they would be hot and sweaty, and most people would be very stinky.

    15:20-15:27

So as a - being a good host, being hospitable, you would anoint people, refresh them with oil.

    15:29-15:32

That's why they would wash their feet and they would anoint their head.

    15:32-15:36

It was to say, you just came in from the heat in the desert.

    15:37-15:38

This will make you feel better.

    15:38-15:45

And quite frankly, it was a benefit to everybody else, too, because if that guy was stinky, it was sort of putting some deodorant on him.

    15:46-15:48

OK, so it was a custom that people did.

    15:51-15:58

But Mary kind of took it up to the next level, Because she didn't just use any old oil.

    15:59-16:02

She used this stuff that the Bible says was very costly.

    16:04-16:06

    Very expensive stuff.

    16:06-16:07

    Usually you drip it on.

    16:08-16:09

And that's how I understand it.

    16:09-16:17

When it says that she broke the flask and poured it over his head, what I imagine is the flask probably had a top on it that just allowed you to drip it.

    16:17-16:20

Because as I said, we're gonna see how expensive this stuff was.

    16:20-16:26

You probably didn't wanna have a open top on it so that one of the kids could knock it over and spill it.

    16:27-16:33

It probably had a top on it to just let it drip, so you could just get a little bit at a time, because it was so expensive.

    16:34-16:41

But she actually broke the top of it off so that it had an open spout and poured it over the head of Jesus.

    16:44-16:45

    And then the fireworks start.

    16:48-16:53

Let's look at the rest of this passage, and then we're going to go back through some application.

    16:55-16:57

Okay, so she broke the flask, poured it over his head.

    16:57-17:05

Verse 4 says, "And there were some who said to themselves indignantly, 'Why was the ointment wasted like that?

    17:07-17:15

For this ointment could have been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to the poor.' And they scolded her.

    17:18-17:20

But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone.

    17:21-17:22

    Why do you trouble her?

    17:24-17:26

She has done a beautiful thing to me.

    17:27-17:27

    Stop.

    17:29-17:32

She has done a beautiful thing to me.

    17:33-17:34

This is the key to this passage.

    17:35-17:36

    Don't misunderstand.

    17:37-17:44

Because in all the hubbub of what's going on in this scene, the only thing that really matters is what Jesus said about it.

    17:44-17:45

    And notice what Jesus said.

    17:47-17:48

You should underline this in your Bible.

    17:49-17:59

done a beautiful thing to me." They were all up in arms and angry and screaming at her.

    18:01-18:02

    Jesus said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    18:05-18:10

She did what's beautiful." In verse 7, Jesus goes on.

    18:10-18:12

He says, "For you always have the poor with you.

    18:15-18:17

And whenever you want, you can do good for them.

    18:18-18:20

But you will not always have me.

    18:21-18:23

She has done what she could.

    18:24-18:27

She has anointed my body beforehand for burial.

    18:29-18:40

And truly I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her." So on your outline, I encourage you to be taking notes.

    18:42-18:44

I'm going with Jesus' opinion here.

    18:44-18:44

    All in favor?

    18:46-18:46

    Okay, good.

    18:47-18:49

How to do a beautiful thing for Jesus.

    18:50-18:52

Jesus said this act was beautiful.

    18:53-18:59

So if I want to do a beautiful thing for Jesus, I want to look at what Mary did.

    19:02-19:03

    Pick up some principles there.

    19:03-19:03

    You ready?

    19:04-19:06

    Number one, give sacrificially.

    19:07-19:08

    Give sacrificially.

    19:12-19:15

Again, verse 3 said that this stuff was very costly.

    19:18-19:19

Like, well how costly was it?

    19:20-19:26

Well, verse 5 says that it could have been sold for more than 300 denarii.

    19:27-19:28

    Like how much is that?

    19:30-19:34

Well, a denarii was about a day's wage.

    19:36-19:41

So, how much would 300 denarii be?

    19:44-19:52

To calculate that out, we're talking approximately a year's worth of income for this one bottle of perfume.

    19:52-19:53

Do you have perfume in your house like that?

    19:55-19:57

And I'm reading this, I'm like, how did Mary get this stuff?

    19:57-20:00

It doesn't matter, I don't know, maybe it was a gift, it's irrelevant.

    20:01-20:07

But she had this bottle of perfume It costs as much as you make in a year.

    20:10-20:16

What she decided to do with this was to give it, more accurately, to use it on Jesus.

    20:18-20:21

Last month we spent four weeks talking about giving.

    20:21-20:27

And understand, there's a difference between giving and sacrificial giving.

    20:27-20:27

    There's a difference.

    20:28-20:28

    Giving is great.

    20:29-20:30

    Giving is great.

    20:30-20:32

What did we see in 2 Corinthians 9?

    20:32-20:33

    God loves a cheerful giver.

    20:34-20:34

    We talked about that.

    20:35-20:36

    God loves everybody.

    20:36-20:44

But the Bible says God has a special affection for people that give in the way that He gives, hilariously, cheerfully, joyfully.

    20:44-20:47

    And giving is fantastic.

    20:49-20:53

But there's something special about sacrificial giving.

    20:53-20:56

Like what's the difference between giving and sacrificial giving?

    20:56-20:57

    Well, it's easy.

    20:57-20:59

Sacrificial giving is something that costs you.

    21:01-21:07

I told you the story about giving some McDonald's chicken sandwiches to the homeless guy outside of Walmart.

    21:07-21:08

    That didn't cost me anything.

    21:08-21:11

    That cost me $3, okay?

    21:13-21:15

    Did my family miss that?

    21:15-21:17

I didn't come home and say, "Aaron, I'm sorry.

    21:18-21:23

We're not going to be able to eat this week because I fed a homeless guy." That didn't really cost me anything.

    21:25-21:29

Sacrificial giving is when you give and it costs you something.

    21:30-21:38

In other words, you say, "I'm willing to go without something so that I can give it to God." And that's exactly what Mary did here.

    21:40-21:47

I don't think Mary was this multi-billionaire that had a whole shelf of these bottles of perfume.

    21:47-21:52

I imagine this was the only thing that she had in the world that had any value to it.

    21:53-21:54

She goes, "You know what I want to do with this?

    21:55-22:00

I want to use it on Jesus." Did that cost her something?

    22:00-22:01

Of course it costs her something.

    22:02-22:12

Church, sometimes God calls us to sacrificial giving to say I'm willing to go without something so that I can give it to the Lord.

    22:13-22:13

    Sacrificial.

    22:14-22:18

Best example of this in Scripture - I'm going to give you the CliffsNotes version, but you can look it up.

    22:19-22:20

    Write this reference down.

    22:20-22:21

    2 Samuel 24.

    22:22-22:25

    2 Samuel 24 v. 18.

    22:26-22:27

Again, this is the CliffsNotes version.

    22:28-22:34

David wanted to build an altar to the Lord on the property of a man named Arana.

    22:35-22:45

Okay, so Arana had this property and David said, "I wanna build an altar to the Lord "on this guy's property." So the Bible says David and his entourage go to Arana's house.

    22:46-22:57

And David's like, "Hey, I wanna buy a chunk of land here from you "to build an altar." And Arana, he said, he's like, "King." He goes, "It's yours.

    22:57-22:58

    You can have it.

    22:59-23:00

    Here, oxen.

    23:00-23:01

    Here's wood.

    23:02-23:03

    It is all yours.

    23:03-23:04

    I'm giving it to you.

    23:05-23:06

I want you to have it.

    23:09-23:13

David said in verse 24-- I love this verse-- David said, no.

    23:16-23:18

But I will buy it from you for a price.

    23:20-23:23

I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God.

    23:24-23:25

    that cost me nothing.

    23:27-23:28

    You get that?

    23:29-23:30

    Do you get that?

    23:33-23:34

    David was the king.

    23:34-23:36

He could have just showed up and seized the property.

    23:37-23:38

This belongs to Israel now, thank you.

    23:40-23:41

He shows up and says, I want to buy it.

    23:41-23:44

And even when the guy graciously wants to give it, David says, no, no, no.

    23:45-23:48

I'm not going to offer to the Lord something that doesn't cost me anything.

    23:50-23:58

You see, just like Mary in this passage, David in 2 Samuel said, "I want my worship to be a sacrificial worship.

    23:59-24:08

I want to give something unto the Lord that costs me something because that's part of worship." Mary gets this.

    24:08-24:17

Would this act of worship for Mary, going back to Mark 14, would this act of worship for Mary express her love and devotion if she just sprinkled a little well water on Jesus?

    24:19-24:20

If she's like, "Jesus is here.

    24:20-24:20

    You know what?

    24:20-24:21

I'm just going to run out to the well.

    24:22-24:33

a little cup and sprinkle a little water, because that sort of meets the hospitality needs that wouldn't have reflected the devotion and worship that she wanted to communicate.

    24:35-24:42

Because truth is, whether we like it or not, whether we want to admit it or not, the size of the gift reflects the love, doesn't it?

    24:42-24:44

The size of the gift reflects the love.

    24:45-24:50

"Oh, you don't have to get me anything." The size of the gift reflects the love.

    24:50-24:54

God loved you so much that He gave you the greatest gift - in His Son.

    24:55-24:58

We even understand this principle human to human, right?

    24:59-25:15

You know, if it's my wife's birthday, I don't stop at the gas station and buy her a Snickers bar on the way home and say, "Oh, it's the thought that counts." She's like, "Yeah, obviously you didn't think very much about me." But did that set you back a buck and a half now?

    25:16-25:20

The size of the gift reflects love and devotion.

    25:22-25:30

That's why you hear these beautiful stories about wives that were working these jobs for the sole purpose of buying their husband a gift.

    25:30-25:33

All of the income from this job, I'm saving it.

    25:33-25:36

I just heard a story about that recently, and it just really touched me.

    25:36-25:39

I worked this job so I could buy my husband this gift.

    25:40-25:42

    That is sacrificial giving.

    25:42-25:43

    Because she gave her time.

    25:45-25:46

    She gave her energy.

    25:47-25:52

She put everything into working to earn the money to give this gift to her husband.

    25:52-25:53

    Why? Because she loves him.

    25:55-25:56

    Mary got that.

    25:58-26:00

She's like, what's the biggest gift that I can give Jesus?

    26:00-26:03

What's the biggest act of worship that I can give Jesus?

    26:05-26:09

Jesus' value to her was greater than the value of the expensive perfume to her.

    26:10-26:12

Here's Jesus sitting in her kitchen.

    26:14-26:19

Here's this bottle of perfume that cost $50,000.

    26:20-26:29

She's like, "He's worth to me more than this." She gave it and noticed that she held nothing back for herself.

    26:32-26:34

She could have said, "You know what?

    26:34-26:36

I'm just going to leave the little drip top on.

    26:36-26:42

Here Jesus, this stuff costs $50,000 a bottle." Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!

    26:42-26:46

That was like $25 worth of perfume I just dripped on you.

    26:46-26:48

She didn't keep any for herself.

    26:48-26:54

She's like, "All on Jesus." That's sacrificial giving.

    26:56-26:57

    Sacrificial giving.

    26:59-27:03

Sometimes church, God calls us to give sacrificially.

    27:03-27:06

Sometimes God calls you, and this is between you and the Lord.

    27:07-27:16

We're going to talk about this here in a second, but sometimes God calls you to say, "Hey, Here's an opportunity to give sacrificially.

    27:16-27:18

I want you to take a step of faith and do it.

    27:19-27:20

    Mary certainly got it.

    27:22-27:23

Look at verses 4 and 5.

    27:25-27:32

It says, "There were some who had said to themselves indignantly, 'Why was the ointment wasted like that?

    27:32-27:42

For this ointment could have been sold for more than 300 denarii and given to the poor, and they scolded her.'" This is heart mark.

    27:44-27:46

This mark reminds me of another mark that I know.

    27:47-27:49

    A gentleman, discreet.

    27:50-27:57

Because if you read John chapter 12, John's like, "It was Judas." He just blows the whistle.

    27:58-28:05

Mark's like, "So there was somebody there "who was like, said this, and then somebody said this." And John's like, "It was Judas.

    28:06-28:10

"Judas said it." Come on, let's name names here, okay?

    28:11-28:12

    It wasn't somebody said it.

    28:12-28:13

    Judas said it.

    28:13-28:17

Oh, and by the way, John adds, by the way, you know something else about Judas?

    28:18-28:21

He was helping himself to the offering plate, okay?

    28:21-28:23

That's something else you need to know about him.

    28:23-28:28

Judas had some sticky fingers and he was stealing from the money that we carried around.

    28:29-28:33

And thank you, John, for shedding some light on this.

    28:36-28:43

But John tells us, elaborating on this, Okay, it wasn't just like some kind of general conversation.

    28:43-28:44

    Judas precipitated this.

    28:47-28:54

Judas was the one that spoke up and said, "That was worth 300 denarii.

    28:54-28:58

We could have given that to the poor." And John's like, "He doesn't care about the poor.

    28:58-28:59

    He cares about Judas.

    29:00-29:08

That's all he cares about, give to the poor." It says that they were indignant.

    29:10-29:13

Mark says that, do you see that at the end of verse five?

    29:13-29:14

    It says they scolded her.

    29:15-29:16

    Can you imagine this scene?

    29:16-29:18

This would have been kind of embarrassing, wouldn't it?

    29:18-29:36

You have this party and Jesus is here, like the biggest celebrity ever is at your house, you know, Scaly Simon's house, and they're having this big party, and Mary comes out and says, "I want to anoint you with this stuff." and the Bible says everybody starts screaming at her.

    29:37-29:39

Like how embarrassing would that have been for Mary?

    29:39-29:40

    Like what are you doing?

    29:41-29:43

Oh my gosh, I can't believe, did you guys see what she did?

    29:43-29:44

I can't believe that she did that.

    29:46-29:50

And that's why the next point on your outline, number two, ignore Judas.

    29:52-29:55

You wanna do a beautiful thing for Jesus, then you're gonna have to ignore Judas.

    29:56-30:03

Because any time you feel led to take a huge step of faith, here come the Judas's.

    30:03-30:06

you can hear their footsteps marching to your door.

    30:08-30:11

I'm thinking about taking a mission trip and here come the Judases.

    30:12-30:14

You couldn't take this mission trip.

    30:14-30:15

You don't make very much money.

    30:16-30:21

Maybe you should leave that for somebody else who knows what they're doing or has been on mission trips.

    30:21-30:23

    Here come the Judases.

    30:24-30:25

    You know what?

    30:25-30:29

I hear about this prison ministry that some guys in the church are involved in.

    30:29-30:30

You know what I was thinking about doing?

    30:30-30:31

I was thinking about doing the training.

    30:32-30:33

about getting involved at prison ministry.

    30:33-30:36

Here come the Judas's, you can't do that.

    30:37-30:39

Why in the world would you do something like that?

    30:39-30:41

You're not cut out for a prison ministry.

    30:41-30:42

Those people would eat you alive.

    30:42-30:45

What are you thinking getting involved in a ministry like that?

    30:45-30:49

You need to leave that to the roughnecks and here come the Judas's.

    30:51-30:54

We've been talking about this opportunity in Romania.

    30:55-30:58

We had a video to show, but we had some technical difficulties.

    30:58-30:59

We're gonna try to get that to you next week.

    31:00-31:05

that Harvest Bible Chapel is building a training center to train pastors, to plant churches all over Europe.

    31:06-31:14

And instead of bringing them all to Chicago, we wanna train pastors in Romania and they've asked us to partner with them.

    31:15-31:27

And we're talking about, right now Jay talked about it last week, we wanna take February, March and April, we wanna take some special offerings to get this training center up and going.

    31:29-31:32

I promise you in talking about that, there are people that are driving home from church.

    31:33-31:34

    Here come the Judas's.

    31:35-31:36

    Our church can't do that.

    31:37-31:38

    We're a little church.

    31:38-31:41

And look at the snow, we're an even littler church today.

    31:41-31:42

    And we can't do that.

    31:43-31:44

We don't have the funds to do that.

    31:45-31:47

And our church is thinking about donating to this.

    31:48-31:49

What about the needs right here?

    31:49-31:50

    What about our own people?

    31:52-31:53

    Here come the Judas's.

    31:55-32:00

Somebody, somebody is going to say because of this Romanian thing, I think that is an awesome idea.

    32:00-32:00

    And you know what?

    32:01-32:04

I have this, our family has this extra car.

    32:04-32:10

We're gonna sell the car and give the proceeds, this Romanian thing, and they're gonna have people say, "Oh gosh, you guys shouldn't do that.

    32:10-32:12

"Come on, you guys are gonna need that.

    32:12-32:19

"You shouldn't do that." Or somebody's gonna say, "Oh, I have these collectibles at my house "that I've kept and I've enjoyed them for years, "but you know what I wanna do?

    32:20-32:25

"I'm going to sell them and I'm going to give the money "to this thing in Romania." And there are gonna be people that say, "You shouldn't do that.

    32:26-32:27

"Those things mean a lot to you.

    32:27-32:29

You shouldn't give those to the Lord.

    32:31-32:33

And they put themselves in the place of Judas.

    32:33-32:34

    What are you doing?

    32:34-32:36

You're giving up something valuable to Jesus?

    32:36-32:38

I can't believe you would do such a thing.

    32:41-32:43

You want to do something beautiful for Jesus?

    32:43-32:45

You're going to have to ignore Judas.

    32:46-32:49

And listen church, I know this can happen innocently.

    32:49-32:50

    It can happen innocently.

    32:52-32:54

I'm not trying to be harsh.

    32:55-32:56

Because I know it can happen innocently.

    32:56-32:57

You show up to small group.

    32:58-33:00

"Hey, did you hear about this Romania thing?

    33:00-33:01

You know what our family's thinking about doing?

    33:02-33:07

Our family's thinking about selling this thing and giving the money." And the small groups, "Oh, you don't make very much money.

    33:07-33:09

You should hang on to that.

    33:09-33:11

And maybe you should take care of yourself first.

    33:12-33:22

And you're going to have people, even maybe with sincere motives, trying to talk you out of it." Or maybe it's not your small group.

    33:22-33:23

    Maybe it's mom and dad.

    33:23-33:25

You're like, "Mom, dad, our church is doing this thing.

    33:25-33:27

and you know what I'm thinking about doing?

    33:27-33:34

I'm thinking about selling off this stuff and giving the money for this mission work and your parents.

    33:34-33:35

    Well, you know what dear?

    33:35-33:41

Maybe at some other stage in your life you'd be better equipped to handle something like that, but you don't make very much money.

    33:41-33:44

Maybe you should hold onto that for a few more years.

    33:47-33:55

And I'm just telling you, when you try to talk somebody out of doing something huge for Jesus, You're putting yourself in the place of Judas.

    33:57-33:59

    Nobody wants to be Judas.

    34:02-34:06

'Cause here's the thing, nothing given to Jesus is wasted.

    34:09-34:12

Nothing given to Jesus is wasted.

    34:14-34:20

Do you think Mary in the aftermath, do you think Mary sat at home going, man, I wish I hadn't done that.

    34:21-34:22

    Man, I miss my perfume.

    34:23-34:24

Do you think she thought that?

    34:24-34:26

I don't think she thought that for a second.

    34:28-34:31

Because worship is never too lavish.

    34:31-34:34

Do you think God's in heaven saying, "You know what?

    34:34-34:36

Those people were just giving too much.

    34:36-34:39

Those people were giving so much.

    34:39-34:39

    You know what?

    34:39-34:41

That's just a little too good for my son.

    34:42-34:43

They need to calm it down.

    34:43-34:47

I can't possibly repay them for their goodness." Do you think God's in heaven saying that?

    34:49-34:51

Nothing given to Jesus is wasted.

    34:53-34:54

Nothing given to Jesus is wasted.

    34:56-35:08

A friend of mine, a couple weeks ago, he's talking about this family in need and he was talking about giving this family in need a big gift to try to help them out.

    35:09-35:21

He says, "What do you think about that?" I said, "I think you should do it." And I said, "I hope that you do do it." And it's my sincere hope for this guy that he doesn't have other people come alongside and try to talk him out.

    35:21-35:25

Because he's doing this, he's giving this gift in the name of the Lord.

    35:26-35:27

    Like do it.

    35:28-35:28

    Do it.

    35:30-35:31

Nothing given to Jesus is wasted.

    35:33-35:34

You want to step out in faith?

    35:35-35:37

You want to trust what God has said concerning giving?

    35:38-35:39

We talked about it all last month.

    35:39-35:40

    Remember, I love to give.

    35:41-35:42

I give and God gives back to me.

    35:43-35:45

to trust God to keep His Word about that?

    35:47-35:49

Well, if you're going to do that, you need to ignore Judas.

    35:51-35:51

    Ignore Judas.

    35:52-35:53

    Number three, seize the opportunity.

    35:55-35:55

    Seize the opportunity.

    35:57-36:04

Verse 7, Jesus said, "You always have the poor with you." I didn't realize this until my studies this week, but that was actually an Old Testament quote.

    36:04-36:05

    Did you know that?

    36:05-36:06

    I bet you knew that.

    36:06-36:08

    Deuteronomy 15.11 says that.

    36:08-36:12

Jesus was quoting Deuteronomy 15, 11, to say you're always gonna have the poor with you.

    36:14-36:21

Jesus said, "Whenever you want, you can do good for them, "but you will not always have me." Seize the opportunity.

    36:22-36:24

And it's funny how quickly people jump onto this.

    36:27-36:29

You know, that could help the poor here.

    36:30-36:31

You're talking about this Romania thing?

    36:31-36:37

I promise you there are gonna be people that say, "Oh, we're talking about like helping people in Romania.

    36:37-36:42

"Do you know we have people here in the Pittsburgh area "that need help?" And my question is, when was the last time you helped them?

    36:44-36:47

We have hungry people in Pittsburgh, when was the last time you helped those people?

    36:48-36:51

And look, it's not one or the other, right?

    36:51-36:52

    Jesus made that clear, right?

    36:52-36:53

    Everybody saw that.

    36:53-36:56

Jesus wasn't like, forget the poor.

    36:56-37:01

Jesus said, "You always have opportunity "to minister to the poor." That's an always thing.

    37:02-37:03

    That's expected.

    37:04-37:06

And we should always be feeding the poor.

    37:06-37:17

That's why we're doing these outreach things, and Ryan Stroop's getting us involved with this living ministry, and Thompson's got us involved in sending those action packs, and we should always be doing this stuff.

    37:18-37:23

It's just funny how people jump in with, that could go to the poor here.

    37:24-37:32

Yes, we take care of the poor here, but that doesn't mean that we don't seize the opportunity to give sacrificially at times.

    37:34-37:40

opportunities for special, lavish, extravagant worship they don't come by every day.

    37:41-37:46

Like this Romania thing, this isn't an opportunity that's going to come by every day.

    37:48-37:52

We're committed to three months, and then I don't know what's going to happen after that, but we committed to three months.

    37:53-37:56

We're going to take an offering for three months to try to get this thing going.

    37:57-37:59

Is there going to be a longer sustained relationship after that?

    37:59-38:02

    I hope so, but I honestly, I don't know.

    38:02-38:04

And you can talk more to one of our elders.

    38:04-38:07

talked about this in our elder meetings, and we said we made a three month commitment.

    38:07-38:12

We wanna give to this and see if we can sustain in our church a longer term relationship.

    38:12-38:14

But I can't promise you that.

    38:14-38:15

But here's what I can promise you.

    38:15-38:18

We have an opportunity right now.

    38:20-38:22

You have an opportunity right now.

    38:24-38:28

Mary saw her opportunity, Mary saw her chance, and she said, "I'm not gonna miss this.

    38:28-38:30

"I'm not going to look back.

    38:30-38:48

"I'm not going to look at this alabaster flask on my shelf, I'm not going to sit and look at this thing next week and say, "I thought about dumping that on Jesus and I didn't. I thought about dumping that on Jesus and I didn't." She's like, "I'm not going to miss this chance." Boom, right in the middle of the party, she does it.

    38:50-39:06

Same for you. I don't want you to look back in June, July, August like, "Oh man, you know what, I wish, you know, I had this, God kind of put it on my heart to take this big step of sacrificial giving for this Romanian mission, and I wish I would have done it, and I didn't do it.

    39:06-39:06

    I missed a chance.

    39:06-39:09

I really wish I'd been part of that.

    39:09-39:10

    I really wish that I...

    39:11-39:12

    Seize the opportunity.

    39:13-39:15

If God calls you to give sacrificially, do it.

    39:15-39:16

    Break the flask.

    39:16-39:17

    No regrets.

    39:19-39:31

I'm dumping this, and I'm enjoying the amazing opportunity to worship right now, and this is an exercise in my faith, and I don't know when I'm going to get another chance, but But I do know this, I'm getting one now.

    39:31-39:32

    Seize the opportunity.

    39:34-39:35

And finally, do what you can.

    39:36-39:37

    Let me rephrase that.

    39:38-39:40

    Do what you can.

    39:42-39:43

    Look at verse 8 again.

    39:44-39:45

    I love this phrase.

    39:46-39:47

    Do not miss this.

    39:48-39:50

We saw this in 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

    39:51-39:58

Look at verse 8, Jesus said, "She has done what she could." She has done what she could.

    39:58-40:02

Mary made a very common act, this anointing, she made a very common act.

    40:02-40:04

    An act of worship.

    40:06-40:13

And then Jesus said, "She has anointed My body beforehand for burial." That phrase always intrigued me.

    40:13-40:15

Do you think Mary knew what she was doing?

    40:16-40:28

Do you think when Mary took that bottle of perfume to Jesus, she was thinking in her mind, "I'm going to anoint Jesus for burial today." Do you think she knew The significance of what she was doing?

    40:29-40:32

Did she know that this was more than a gesture of kindness?

    40:32-40:34

That this was actually anointing for burial?

    40:36-40:38

I've thought about that a lot this week.

    40:39-40:44

My conclusion is, she must have believed Jesus when Jesus said He was going to die.

    40:44-40:46

    She must have believed that.

    40:48-40:51

All the times Jesus said, "I'm going to Jerusalem. I'm going to die.

    40:51-41:00

I'm going to die." It seems to me that Mary did know, which is why she realized that this is my chance to do something extravagant.

    41:02-41:03

It seems that the time is near.

    41:03-41:04

Jesus has been talking about this.

    41:05-41:06

It seems like the time's ticking down.

    41:06-41:09

Now's my chance to do something completely out of the ordinary.

    41:11-41:12

    Look at this phrase.

    41:13-41:14

Jesus said she has done what she could.

    41:16-41:18

She has done what she could.

    41:18-41:19

And church, I want to leave this with you.

    41:21-41:24

Just like when we talked about giving, Remember the very first sermon.

    41:25-41:26

    You have something to give.

    41:27-41:33

You might not have as much as the next guy, and you might have more than the guy after that, but you have something.

    41:33-41:37

In the same way, you have something that you can do.

    41:38-41:40

You have something that you can do.

    41:40-41:43

I'll be honest with you, I never wanted to be a preacher.

    41:44-41:45

Ever wanted to be a preacher.

    41:47-41:49

I want to be a worship leader.

    41:51-41:52

    Because worship leaders are cool.

    41:54-42:01

And worship leaders get to stand up here and lead a congregation in passionate worship of Jesus Christ.

    42:01-42:03

    Worship leaders are cool.

    42:04-42:06

And I wish I could be a worship leader.

    42:07-42:12

But I can't sing or play the guitar, and those are two things on the top of the list of job requirements.

    42:15-42:16

    I can't do that.

    42:18-42:20

But you know something I can do?

    42:20-42:29

I can get fired up about what God says in His Word, and I can share with you, like, "Hey, check this out, check out what God's Word says." And let's get fired up about that.

    42:29-42:30

That's something that I can do.

    42:31-42:37

You might be sitting there saying, "Well, you know, I can't lead worship, "and I can't preach a sermon." And the point is, you can do something, right?

    42:38-42:39

    You can do something.

    42:40-42:52

I was talking with Darla Berry this morning about, you know, she works with the crisis center, and there's new laws coming out concerning regulations for child abuse, things like that.

    42:52-42:55

And we have background checks done on everybody that works with kids.

    42:55-43:03

And she said, "Well, there's some new regulations "that come out, do you think that's something "that I can share with people that work with kids?" And you see, that's a perfect example.

    43:04-43:06

    She's doing what she can.

    43:06-43:11

Darla's like, "Okay, well, I'm in this field "and I see this possible need in the church.

    43:12-43:15

"I can do that, I can do that.

    43:16-43:20

"The question is, what can you do?" What can you do?

    43:22-43:27

Like, well you know what, I might not be able to drive the trailer, but I can make phone calls.

    43:27-43:30

Great, we need people to follow it up with all the time.

    43:30-43:30

    Can you do that?

    43:31-43:32

    I can bake.

    43:33-43:38

Wouldn't it be nice if we had a family visit the church and you showed up at their house with something that you baked for them?

    43:39-43:43

I can't do much, but I can visit with people who are hurting.

    43:44-43:48

There's no shortage of people who are hurting that would appreciate somebody sitting down and talk with them.

    43:48-43:50

    You have something to give.

    43:50-43:52

You have something that you can do.

    43:53-43:55

Jesus said she's done what she could.

    43:56-43:57

    How about you?

    43:57-43:58

Can Jesus rightly say that of you?

    44:00-44:02

You know the lavish worship that he's doing?

    44:02-44:03

He's just doing what he does.

    44:04-44:06

How can you use your giftedness to serve Christ?

    44:07-44:09

God doesn't expect me to do what someone else is doing.

    44:11-44:12

    And that is so freeing.

    44:13-44:16

I know that I'm not gonna show up in heaven and God say, you know what, Jeff?

    44:16-44:18

I just really wanted you to be a worship leader.

    44:19-44:23

Like, I didn't have the tools for that.

    44:23-44:24

    That's not the case.

    44:24-44:27

If God wanted me to have the tools for that, do you think I'd be a worship leader?

    44:27-44:28

    Of course I would.

    44:31-44:33

He's just like, Jeff, I just want you to do what you can.

    44:35-44:36

Like Jesus said to Mary, she did what she could.

    44:38-44:47

Verse nine, Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, "wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, What she has done will be told in memory of her.

    44:49-44:58

You know that right now, February 1st, 2015, as you are sitting in church, you are watching prophecy being fulfilled in front of your eyes.

    44:58-45:05

Okay, so all the people that didn't come out today because there was a couple of snowflakes, next week when you see them, here's what I want you to tell them.

    45:05-45:11

And they're like, "What happened in church last week?" I want you to say, "We saw prophecy fulfilled right before our eyes, right in church.

    45:12-45:17

The Word of God actually - a prophecy transpired as we were sitting there.

    45:19-45:20

    And what is the prophecy?

    45:21-45:26

Jesus said when somebody proclaims the Gospel, this woman is going to be remembered.

    45:26-45:29

This act specifically is going to be remembered.

    45:31-45:32

    She did a beautiful thing.

    45:33-45:34

    And you can too.

    45:35-45:41

How can I do a beautiful thing unto Jesus make Mary give sacrificially.

    45:42-45:43

    Ignore Judas.

    45:44-45:45

    Seize an opportunity.

    45:47-45:48

    Do what you can.

    45:49-45:49

    Let's pray.

    45:50-45:55

Father in Heaven, it is a beautiful thing that Mary had done for You.

    45:57-46:01

Father, we rejoice at the opportunities that You give us to give sacrificially.

    46:03-46:06

You have given us so much and You have blessed us with so much.

    46:09-46:15

This is a joy for me to be serving alongside people who get it.

    46:16-46:19

People who, like last week, talking about the car accident.

    46:19-46:21

People who were offering me cars.

    46:23-46:23

    Why?

    46:24-46:26

It was in the name of the Lord.

    46:27-46:39

People who are using the giftedness and the resources that you have entrusted them with and bringing it to the church to say, How can I use this to glorify Jesus Christ?

    46:41-46:43

Father, I thank You for that.

    46:43-46:53

And I just ask that You would continue to stir in us a spirit of generosity as we, making these plans over these next three months to take offerings for this mission in Romania.

    46:53-46:58

Father, put it on our hearts to emulate Mary.

    46:59-47:01

To say this is for Jesus.

    47:01-47:03

This isn't for Harvest Pittsburgh North.

    47:04-47:08

This isn't for a harvest in Romania.

    47:09-47:11

This isn't for a training center.

    47:11-47:13

At the end of the day, this is for Jesus.

    47:16-47:25

You've given us a very concrete opportunity to put Your Word into practice, and I pray, Father, You would find us faithful in doing so.

    47:26-47:28

    Again, Father, we thank You.

    47:28-47:30

We praise You in the glorious name of Your Son.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 14:1-9

  1. Do you think Mary knew that she was "anointing Jesus for burial" as she was committing the act, or do you think Jesus ascribed that meaning to what she thought was just hospitality? Explain your position and reason.

  2. The Bible calls us to be good stewards, but the Bible also calls us to give lavishly by faith. How do you reconcile these two teachings? How do you know when to use stewardship principles and when to take a step of faith and give extravagantly?

Open up your Bibles to the gospel according to Mark.

    00:05-00:11

And as you've seen from this fall, we are finishing the gospel of Mark.

    00:11-00:27

Last year we did Mark chapters 1 through 10, which was the ministry of Jesus, and this year we're doing Mark 11 through 16, which covers the last week of Jesus' life, also called Passion Week, ultimately culminating in his death, burial, and resurrection.

    00:28-00:56

we are covering Mark, we're breaking it down into three acts, so to speak, and this fall the theme was "He is the Lord." And hopefully as we've been studying through this, you have been moving in your own hearts from "He is the Lord" to "He is my Lord." He is my Lord. And what have we seen this fall? I'm going to Let me review every sermon that we've covered this fall.

    00:58-01:09

Quickly, we saw that Jesus made His triumphal entry announcing to the world that He is the Messiah when He entered Jerusalem.

    01:10-01:11

We saw Jesus cleanse the temple.

    01:13-01:23

And as a result, we saw Jesus challenged by all the religious leaders trying to make Jesus look foolish in the eyes of the people.

    01:24-01:46

Jesus in turn warned His disciples against these false religious teachers, and that led us up to chapter 13 where the disciples asked Jesus a question. They said, "What is going to be the sign of your return, of the second coming, of the end of the age, of the fulfillment of these things.

    01:46-01:55

And Mark chapter 13 is the CliffsNotes version, or the abbreviated version of the book of Revelation.

    01:57-02:03

So part three, spoiler alert on your outline, here is how to apply end times teaching.

    02:04-02:05

    Here's how to apply this.

    02:06-02:09

Something they teach when you go to preacher school.

    02:11-02:14

When you preach a sermon, there's really three parts to a sermon.

    02:15-02:19

There's the explanation - this is what the text means.

    02:19-02:27

Then there's the illustration, which is let's give color and flavor, help us to understand a little bit.

    02:28-02:29

    Illustration.

    02:29-02:32

And then the third part is application.

    02:33-02:35

Meaning, so what should I do with this?

    02:35-02:39

How can I incorporate this truth of God's Word into my life?

    02:40-02:54

And that's exactly how Jesus preached, because we see through Mark chapter 13, he gives the explanation to say, here's what's going to go down, and today we're going to see Jesus give the illustration and the application.

    02:55-02:57

So here's how to apply end time teaching.

    02:58-03:00

Grab your outline, number one, write this down.

    03:01-03:02

    It's very simple today.

    03:04-03:05

    Number one, pay attention.

    03:07-03:08

    Pay attention.

    03:10-03:16

Look at verse 28, it says, "From the fig tree, learn its lesson.

    03:18-03:26

As soon as the branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near.

    03:27-03:58

So also when you see these things taking place, you know that He is near at the very gates." second, first of all, notice in verse 28, Jesus said, "Learn this lesson." And I've heard, you know, preachers and Bible teachers, like, "I don't talk about Daniel. I don't talk about Revelation because nobody can really understand it and it's too controversial." And what was Jesus' attitude here? What did He say to do? He said, "Learn this lesson.

    03:59-04:32

Learn. Study this. You can figure this out." And for the people that might be sitting here today saying, you know, the Bible is just so hard to understand. It's just the Bible is so complicated. Not complicated at all. Do you see Jesus illustration here? Very easy illustration. He said, when you see the leaves on the tree in the spring, that means summer is near, right? And as Jesus would have been saying this to the disciples, it would have been in the springtime.

    04:36-04:42

And the last two weeks we had already discussed many of the signs that have already taken place.

    04:42-04:45

Remember Jesus started this off by talking about the temple.

    04:45-04:55

Remember one of the disciples was like, "Look how pretty the temple is." And Jesus said, "There's not going to be a stone left on a stone that's coming down." And that was fulfilled in 70 AD.

    04:57-05:02

And then Jesus talked about history as we are living in right now.

    05:02-05:04

Do you remember some of the things he said to be watching for?

    05:05-05:06

He said this is what's going to go down.

    05:07-05:08

    There were, what was it?

    05:08-05:17

There were wars and rumors of wars and earthquakes and famines and pestilences and persecutions and all of these things.

    05:17-05:22

You can just pick up a newspaper and just say, look, Jesus was batting a thousand there.

    05:22-05:24

He hit every single one of those things.

    05:25-05:26

We have seen these things happen in history.

    05:28-05:29

    Those are signs.

    05:30-05:32

And then Jesus said there are more signs that are coming.

    05:32-05:47

Last week we talked about the tribulation, the seven-year period, Daniel's 70th week, a period of seven years in the future when God is going to be unleashing His judgment on the earth, preparing the way for Jesus Christ to return.

    05:49-06:11

So with all of these signs, Jesus' application here first of all is He says simply this, "Pay attention." Verse 30, He says, "Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place." This generation, what generation?

    06:12-06:14

A lot of controversy over this phrase.

    06:14-06:16

What generation is He talking about?

    06:17-06:19

It's pretty obvious what generation he's talking about.

    06:20-06:24

He just mentioned a period of seven years when all of these things were going to go down.

    06:24-06:26

That's the generation he's talking about.

    06:27-06:43

In other words, the generation that sees these signs that are kicked off by the Antichrist, the abomination that makes desolation, the generation that sees those signs is going to see it all go down over a period of seven years, meaning this isn't going to be stretched out indefinitely.

    06:44-06:47

generation that sees these signs happening, they're going to see it completed.

    06:51-06:54

    So Jesus says, "Pay attention.

    06:56-06:57

    Pay attention.

    06:58-06:59

    Pay attention to what's happening.

    07:00-07:00

    Pay attention.

    07:01-07:03

You should be watching the news.

    07:03-07:05

You should be reading the newspaper.

    07:05-07:07

You should be following what's happening in the Middle East.

    07:07-07:16

Pay attention." But because we are people, we need motivation to pay attention, don't we?

    07:17-07:44

The past several weeks, my son Cade has been learning a Bible verse a week, and usually Sunday night, I pick a Bible verse that we memorize, and I take a dry erase board, and I write the verse on the board, and we say it several times, explain it, do you understand what this is saying, and then I erase a couple of words, And then we say it again, but he has to fill in the missing words I took out, then I take out two more words, two more words.

    07:46-07:50

There's not a person on this planet I love more than I love my family.

    07:51-07:55

Cade, specifically, but I can't mention, can't say him without mentioning the rest of the family.

    07:55-07:56

I don't favor him over the others.

    07:56-08:00

I love all three of them equally, but there's nobody on this earth I love more than those three people.

    08:00-08:02

But let me tell you, I say this in love.

    08:03-08:05

Cade has the attention span of a pigeon.

    08:07-08:08

    He just does.

    08:08-08:16

And when Mandy from our Harvest Kids ministry was talking about the kids memorizing a verse, I'll be honest with you, I said there is no way that Kate can memorize a verse.

    08:16-08:18

I told Aaron, it's just not gonna happen.

    08:20-08:22

He just can't do it, he has no attention span.

    08:23-08:24

    I had this idea.

    08:25-08:29

In my shed, I have every toy that I had when I was a child.

    08:30-08:34

Yes, I'm a big nerd, but in boxes in my shed is every toy that I've ever owned.

    08:34-08:38

And I thought, you know what?

    08:39-08:41

I can use that as motivator for Cade.

    08:42-08:49

So what I do is I take newspaper and I wrap up a toy and then I put it in a Ziploc bag.

    08:50-08:53

And I set it right beside the dry erase board where we do the Bible verse.

    08:54-08:57

And I say, Cade, when you learn your verse, you get whatever's in that bag.

    08:59-09:01

And he has been learning these verses like crazy.

    09:02-09:03

    He knows all of them.

    09:03-09:06

All I have to do is, what did we say, what did we say, Philippians 2, 14?

    09:06-09:08

He's got it, he's got it.

    09:10-09:20

How did he go from, I can't pay attention to the point that I lose focus in the middle of a sentence while you're speaking?

    09:20-09:27

How did we get from there to, I will sit for a half hour, 45 minutes, and learn a Bible verse?

    09:28-09:29

    He was rightly motivated.

    09:31-09:32

    He was rightly motivated.

    09:32-09:39

That thing sitting there was just his constant reminder, you know what, I need to pay attention, I need to pay attention, I need to pay attention, and it's working.

    09:40-09:41

    It's working.

    09:42-09:50

So, for you, I know that you do not have a hard time paying attention.

    09:52-09:58

But I'm going to give you a couple of motivators to pay attention because Jesus did.

    09:58-09:59

    You ready, jot these down.

    10:00-10:02

Number one, what motivates us to pay attention?

    10:03-10:04

Number one, his return is certain.

    10:05-10:06

    His return is certain.

    10:08-10:16

Now, if you were with us the last three weeks, hearing these things, you're just like, especially last week, like, wow, wow.

    10:16-10:20

Is that stuff really gonna happen?

    10:20-10:28

I mean, seven year tribulation and the son going out and Jesus returning, riding a horse.

    10:29-10:30

Is that stuff really going to happen?

    10:30-10:33

Is Jesus gonna ride a white horse and return?

    10:33-10:34

Is that really going to happen?

    10:35-10:37

Well, look at what Jesus said in verse 31.

    10:40-10:52

Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, "but my words will not pass away." Why do you think he said that?

    10:55-10:59

I think because when it comes to these types of discussions, there's a lot of doubt.

    11:00-11:04

And there's a lot of questioning as to whether this stuff is really literally true.

    11:05-11:17

And Jesus' response to that is, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." In other words, the Word of Christ will stand when everything else falls.

    11:19-11:22

There are two places the Word of God has attacked more than any other.

    11:23-11:24

And that's the beginning and the end, right?

    11:26-11:28

Genesis and Revelation always under attack.

    11:28-11:29

    Origins.

    11:29-11:30

    How old is the earth?

    11:30-11:31

    And evolution.

    11:32-11:35

And some model of how we got here without God.

    11:35-11:41

And Genesis is always attacked, but the other book that's attacked almost as much is Revelation.

    11:41-11:42

It's not really going down that way.

    11:43-11:44

    That's fairy tale stuff.

    11:44-11:45

    He's not coming back.

    11:46-11:55

And Jesus' response to that is, "Everything else in the universe will collapse, but my My Word will never fail.

    11:56-12:00

Not one thing I've said is going to fail to be fulfilled.

    12:01-12:02

    This will stand.

    12:03-12:06

That Bible that's sitting on your lap, it's going to stand.

    12:06-12:09

And people have been trying to eradicate it throughout history.

    12:10-12:11

Wipe it from the face of the earth.

    12:12-12:14

Those people are gone, but the Bible still stands.

    12:17-12:18

    The Bible's going to stand.

    12:18-12:30

the words of Christ are going to stand after every arrogant, God-defying mouth is finally proven to be foolish, the word of Christ is going to stand. So His return is certain.

    12:31-12:37

His return is certain. And secondly, motivator to pay attention, His return is imminent.

    12:38-12:56

Look at verse 32, "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." How does Jesus not know something?

    12:57-13:10

Well, in the incarnation as God became a man, He humbled Himself and He set aside some divine prerogatives that, I'm just telling you, I don't fully understand it, but I believe it.

    13:11-13:18

As part of his humiliation, he didn't have the information.

    13:19-13:20

    He said he didn't know.

    13:22-13:34

Now, we know that he's going to return after these signs that he described in the tribulation, but exactly when after these signs?

    13:37-13:38

    Jesus said nobody knows.

    13:38-13:40

You're like, "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.

    13:40-13:50

If these things are all going to take place, doesn't it make sense that as soon as this last sign happens, Jesus returns immediately?

    13:51-13:55

So how can there be a mystery about his return?" Jot this reference down.

    13:56-13:58

    Daniel chapter 12, verses 11 through 12.

    14:00-14:37

Daniel chapter 12, verses 11 through 12 says, "And from the time that the regular burnt offering is taken away and the abomination that makes desolate is set up, there shall be 1,290 days." That number is significant. Why? Because when the Bible talks about—math alert—when the Bible talks about the three and a half year period, that great tribulation, the second half of that seven years, it often refers to it as 1,260 days. But all of a sudden, Daniel talks about 1290 days, so that is how many more days?

    14:38-14:39

    30, right.

    14:39-14:40

    Very good.

    14:41-14:53

And then Daniel says this, "Blessed is he who waits and arrives at the 1335 days." Wait a minute, how many more days is that?

    14:54-14:57

Well, you go from 1260 to 1290, that's 30 more.

    14:58-15:02

And then 1290-1335 is another 45.

    15:03-15:11

So there's this period after the tribulation of 75 days that Daniel mentions.

    15:12-15:20

This last 3 1/2 years of the tribulation, there's a period of 75 days or somewhere between 2 months, 3 months.

    15:22-15:28

See, Jesus is going to return sometime during that 75 days.

    15:29-15:30

Because look at the text again.

    15:31-15:34

Jesus said concerning that day or that hour no one knows.

    15:34-15:37

Notice Jesus didn't say concerning that year.

    15:38-15:45

I think it's going to be pretty obvious to that generation that knows their Bible, the people that come to faith and have read and understand, I think it's going to be obvious.

    15:46-15:49

Jesus is coming like this year.

    15:50-15:51

Well, what day and what time?

    15:52-15:59

Jesus said, "Well, that's the mystery." Sometime in that 75 days, but nobody's sure which day and which hour.

    16:01-16:03

    Bottom line is pay attention.

    16:04-16:18

Watch the signs because some of you - some of you here who don't know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and if you choose to not come to faith in Him, some of you here very possibly will be living through these days.

    16:20-16:22

Do you really think those days are coming, Pastor Jeff?

    16:22-16:24

Well, Jesus said that they were.

    16:27-16:28

So you need to pay attention.

    16:30-16:31

    Pay attention.

    16:31-16:34

Secondly for today, very simply, stay awake.

    16:36-16:37

    Stay awake.

    16:38-16:40

Look at verses 33 through 37.

    16:40-16:43

    Jesus said, "Be on guard.

    16:46-16:50

"Keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come.

    16:50-16:59

like a man going on a journey when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.

    17:02-17:04

    Therefore, stay awake.

    17:05-17:14

For you do not know when the master of the house will come in the evening or at midnight or when the rooster crows or in the morning, lest he come suddenly and find you asleep.

    17:16-17:17

What I say to you, I say to all.

    17:19-17:20

    Stay awake.

    17:22-17:26

So here's a message for those who come to faith in Jesus Christ during the tribulation.

    17:29-17:31

    Jesus said, "What?

    17:35-17:39

Stay awake." Now I would suggest to you if Jesus says something, you should take it serious, right?

    17:39-17:40

    All in favor?

    17:41-18:33

If Jesus says something twice in a row, do you think maybe you should sit up in your little bit like this must be important. What if Jesus says something three times in a row? Do you think that Jesus is really emphasizing a point? In this passage I counted four times. Stay awake. Stay awake. Stay awake. Stay awake. Four times in one passage, and that tells me this has to be as serious as it gets. And you saw Jesus' illustration. Jesus said, verse 34, "It's like a man going on a journey." Obviously referring to Jesus going to heaven, right? He's going on a journey and He's coming back.

    18:34-18:46

So a man on a journey, Jesus going to heaven, and He leaves His servants in charge. And We have been given authority to get some stuff done.

    18:49-18:49

But look at this next phrase.

    18:50-18:50

    This is important.

    18:51-18:58

Jesus says, "Each with his work." Each, first of all, means every one of you.

    19:00-19:06

With his work, meaning church, we have kingdom work to accomplish.

    19:09-19:13

And the question is, What has God called and equipped you to do?

    19:14-19:16

What has God called and equipped you to do?

    19:17-19:18

Do you know what that is?

    19:20-19:22

What has God called and equipped you to do?

    19:23-19:28

And the follow-up question is, are you doing it?

    19:29-19:35

He said, "I'm leaving each of you a job." And the Bible says that His Holy Spirit empowers us to do that work.

    19:36-19:37

    So are you doing it?

    19:39-19:41

And that second question is a yes or a no.

    19:43-19:51

If you're like, "I haven't really been doing much of anything for the kingdom." Jesus says, "Wake up!

    19:55-20:01

Wake up!" Giving His illustration a modern spin, I can totally relate to this.

    20:04-20:05

    Maybe you can too.

    20:08-20:10

and giving his illustration a modern spin.

    20:11-20:17

Jack, let's pretend that your parents say to you, "Hey, we're going shopping.

    20:18-20:25

And we're going to give you and Jesse and Livvy all work to do, but Jack, you're in charge.

    20:27-20:44

We're going shopping and we're going to come back." And let's be honest, Jack, wouldn't it be real tempting as soon as mom and dad pull out of the driveway to kick back and watch TV and play some video games?

    20:45-20:45

    Wouldn't that be tempting?

    20:47-20:49

You're like, maybe for other people, but not for me.

    20:50-20:50

    Let's be honest.

    20:51-20:52

    Wouldn't it be tempting?

    20:52-20:55

Like mom and dad pull out of the driveway and like, woohoo!

    20:55-20:56

    No parental authority.

    20:57-20:59

So, hey, let's fire up the PlayStation.

    20:59-21:03

And you know, let's call some friends over and let's have a party.

    21:05-22:02

there's a problem. You see, mom and dad said that they were going shopping. They didn't say where they were going shopping. They didn't say how many stores they were going to. Did that mean they were making a quick trip to Target and they're gonna come back within the hour? Does that mean they were gonna drive down to Robinson and hit a lot of places down there and they'll be back in eight hours? You don't know. You see, that's why when you're tempted to say, "I'm just gonna kick back." Well, wait a minute. They could be back at any minute. So, Jack, you, of course, would do what they told you to do. They said, "Hey, we're giving each of you a job, and you guys would each do what your parents told you to do." Why? Because if the work's not done when they come home, they're going to disown you, right?

    22:03-22:07

Like you're no longer in work. No, that's not the case. That's not the case at all.

    22:08-22:10

The issue is you love your parents, right?

    22:11-22:22

They're watching. You love your parents, right? Of course you do. I know you do. You love your parents and you realize that the work that they gave you to do is important. That's why you do it.

    22:25-22:28

And church, that's the motivator that we have.

    22:29-22:35

Understand, if you're a follower of Jesus Christ, this isn't a threat of judgment that He's coming back for you.

    22:35-22:39

If you're a follower of Christ, He's coming back to take you into His eternal kingdom forever.

    22:40-22:41

So this isn't threat of judgment.

    22:43-22:50

But church, the same thing should motivate us that motivated the Orts, is to say, you know what, why do we get to work?

    22:50-22:53

    Because we love God.

    22:55-22:59

And, listen, the work is important.

    23:00-23:06

And I think a lot of times that's why people don't get motivated to get involved in ministries because they just don't think it's that important.

    23:08-23:09

    It's not that important.

    23:10-23:11

    It is important.

    23:13-23:16

It's important because these are kingdom things that we're doing.

    23:18-23:21

And it's important because He equipped us to do them.

    23:22-23:26

God didn't empower us to rearrange the deck furniture on the Titanic.

    23:29-23:32

This kingdom business is stuff that impacts eternity.

    23:34-23:36

So we do it because, yeah, He's coming back.

    23:39-23:45

And certainly we don't want Jesus coming back and finds us sleeping.

    23:47-23:55

But because we love Him and because the work is important, we do the job that He empowers and commands us to do.

    23:56-24:00

So the application for those in the tribulation is really the same application for us, right?

    24:01-24:02

    Urgency.

    24:03-24:03

    Urgency.

    24:07-24:13

Because truth is, even though we don't live in this time now, same application, your time is limited.

    24:15-24:17

    Your time is limited, right?

    24:18-24:20

How many more days do you have left on the earth?

    24:21-24:24

Christ could come back and rapture His church today.

    24:26-24:27

That would cut our time short.

    24:29-24:43

Or not to be grim, but you could be debilitated, whether through being involved in some kind an accident or having a stroke or a serious health issue, you could be debilitated.

    24:47-24:48

    Or you could die.

    24:51-24:54

All of that to say your time is limited on this earth.

    24:56-25:00

And I don't know how many more days that you have, but I know that you have today.

    25:01-25:02

    Today is opportunity.

    25:03-25:04

    Today is opportunity.

    25:07-25:37

From Jesus, in light of each grain of sand falling through the hourglass, every tick of the clock getting us a second closer to these events taking place, Jesus says, "Stay awake." You're like, "But Pastor Jeff, there's a lot to do." Just do your part.

    25:39-25:43

God hasn't called you to do everything, nor did He equip you to do everything.

    25:44-25:45

But He's called you to do something.

    25:45-25:46

    Do your part.

    25:48-25:52

You're like, "But Pastor Jeff, I don't know if I can." God is your strength.

    25:55-25:59

"But Pastor Jeff, I don't even know what I'm supposed to do." Call me.

    26:01-26:02

    We'll figure it out.

    26:03-26:04

    724-306-1012.

    26:05-26:05

    Call me.

    26:06-26:06

    We'll figure it out.

    26:08-26:10

Like, I cannot wait until tomorrow.

    26:11-26:13

    You might not have tomorrow.

    26:14-26:15

    Stay awake.

    26:17-26:33

If you want to evaluate how your walk with Christ is currently, or even if you have one, as we've looked at Jesus' teaching on the end times, let me just simply ask you this, does the return of Jesus Christ scare you to death, or do you long for it?

    26:35-26:36

You have to answer that one.

    26:37-26:37

    Does it scare you?

    26:39-26:40

Like, oh gosh, I hope he doesn't come back today.

    26:41-26:46

In fact, I hope he doesn't come back, like, any time before, like, the year 2018.

    26:46-26:48

    Like, does it scare you?

    26:51-26:52

Or is it something that you long for?

    26:53-26:54

    Like, I can't wait.

    26:54-26:56

I can't wait until he returns.

    26:56-27:03

I can't wait until all these things take place so I can fully be in the presence of my Savior.

    27:05-27:29

Stay awake. Abide in Christ. Be doing what He called you to. You love Him, and it's important. Stay awake. Let's pray. Father in heaven, we thank you first of all for revealing truth to us.

    27:30-27:32

We are not a people who are wondering.

    27:35-27:37

I wonder how the world's going to end.

    27:37-27:41

Are nuclear weapons going to destroy the world tomorrow?

    27:41-27:46

We don't have to wonder that stuff because Jesus laid it all out for us.

    27:48-27:50

And then Jesus made a statement.

    27:50-27:54

He said, "And what I say to you, I say to all in God." That includes us.

    27:54-27:55

    He said all.

    27:56-27:58

Every single one of us are to stay awake.

    28:00-28:03

And God, it is so tempting to check out of society.

    28:03-28:11

It would be so tempting to buy a log cabin in the middle of nowhere and just let the world go down the toilet.

    28:13-28:14

    But that's not faithfulness.

    28:15-28:21

Jesus said that the Master left His servants in charge each to His work.

    28:21-28:30

And God, I believe that You have equipped and empowered Your people carrying out the ministry of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world.

    28:31-28:42

So Father, I pray for myself and for my household, and I pray for my brothers and sisters in Christ at Harvest Bible Chapel, that we would be people who stay awake.

    28:44-28:49

That we do what we do because we love you, and we do what we do because we see how important it is.

    28:51-29:00

Father, keep us awake, joyfully and delightfully serving our Lord and our Savior, Jesus Christ.

    29:00-29:02

It is in His name that we pray.

    29:03-29:03

    Amen.

  • 00:00-00:08

I used to work with this guy, and he was what we call a story topper.

    00:08-00:10

Do you know what I mean by a story topper?

    00:11-00:13

How many people know what I mean when I say a story topper?

    00:13-00:14

    Most of you.

    00:14-00:24

For some of you who don't know, this is the guy, and maybe you work with one, too, but this is the guy that no matter what your circumstances, his are always worse.

    00:25-00:25

    Okay?

    00:26-00:32

And you can't say anything to this guy without him popping your story.

    00:33-00:34

And I've worked with this guy.

    00:35-00:42

And I would say, "Well, you know, I'm just really tired today." He would say, "Oh, you think that's bad?

    00:43-00:51

I haven't slept in 15 days." And you'd be like, "Well, I guess I'm just a little tired.

    00:51-00:52

I've been working a lot lately.

    00:54-01:54

Oh, you think that's bad. I haven't had a day off since Thanksgiving three years ago Like well, yeah, I guess I've been trying to put in some extra hours because money's been tight. Oh you think that's bad. I Have four cents in my checking account And it doesn't matter what you would say to the guy his was always you always follow up with oh you think that's bad And last week when we studied God's Word, we saw some pretty bad things were going to go down throughout history according to Jesus. And I guess to borrow a line from this guy that I worked with to start off the message today, I would say, "Oh, you think that's bad?" If you thought what we discussed last week was bad, wait until you see what Jesus says as he continues. So turn in your Bibles to Mark chapter 13.

    01:58-02:34

And the title of this message is Spoiler Alert. And if you weren't here last week and you don't know what that is, if you get online to read about a movie or a TV show, a lot of websites will say at the top, "Spoiler Alert." What that means is we're going to be reviewing this movie and in our review we're going to be covering some key plot points so if you don't want to know what they are stop reading and Jesus in this passage in Mark chapter 13 is telling us about the end of the world.

    02:36-02:41

Again quick review from last week the disciples said to Jesus what happens before you return?

    02:42-02:44

What are going to be the signs of the end of the age?

    02:45-02:47

    And Jesus gave a timeline.

    02:48-02:54

You look on your insert at the bottom, we have the Old Testament era, and then we have the cross.

    02:54-02:58

That was the days of Jesus leading up to his death and resurrection.

    02:58-03:03

Well, last week we covered what's inside that white box, the church age.

    03:03-03:10

Jesus said, "Here's what's going to happen in the church age." And just to review, Jesus said, "Well, first of all, He talked about the temple.

    03:12-03:14

The temple's coming down, that happened in 70 AD.

    03:15-03:26

And throughout human history, he said, you're going to see false Christs and wars and earthquakes and famines and pestilences and persecution and all of that happens in the day that we live in.

    03:27-03:31

Notice that next box, says tribulation.

    03:34-03:38

And that's the period that is yet future.

    03:39-03:42

that Jesus is talking about in this passage.

    03:43-03:44

    Look at verse 14.

    03:46-03:58

Jesus said, "But when you see "the abomination of desolation," and you have to see that verse 14 is a shift in your Bible.

    03:59-04:10

Notice that Jesus moves from talking about general things that are going to happen through history The very specific things that are going to happen in the future.

    04:10-04:11

Do you see that in your Bible?

    04:11-04:18

He says, but when you see, meaning here's some specific things that are coming that you need to be looking for.

    04:20-04:23

General to specific, this tribulation period.

    04:25-04:27

Last for seven years, you're ready to do some math.

    04:29-04:31

Math people in here, who's our math people?

    04:32-04:35

OK, a couple of you who are the I hate math people.

    04:36-04:37

    Everybody else, OK.

    04:39-04:45

Now, I actually like got my calculator and worked on this this week, so we're going to do this together, OK?

    04:47-04:51

But these events are over a period of seven years that Jesus is talking about.

    04:51-04:52

    Draw these references down.

    04:53-04:56

This is in Daniel, chapter nine, Daniel, chapter nine.

    04:56-04:58

    Daniel prophesied.

    05:00-05:05

Seventy weeks, but these weren't weeks of days.

    05:06-05:09

What would be seven weeks of days?

    05:09-05:10

How many days would that be?

    05:12-05:13

How many, 49, is that right?

    05:13-05:15

    Yeah, okay, 49.

    05:16-05:17

    That'd be 49 days, right?

    05:17-05:18

    Seven weeks times seven days.

    05:19-05:23

This is 70 weeks of years.

    05:24-05:27

So that would be, what's the math on that?

    05:29-05:31

    490 years, right?

    05:31-05:33

70 times, Ken, am I doing this right?

    05:34-05:35

    It's just back there laughing.

    05:38-05:39

    Does anybody have a calculator?

    05:41-05:42

    490 years.

    05:42-05:42

    Thank you.

    05:43-05:47

So Daniel prophesied 70 weeks of years.

    05:49-05:50

    And how was that fulfilled?

    05:50-05:56

Well in Daniel's day, Artaxerxes made a decree to rebuild Jerusalem.

    05:58-05:59

    Okay, so here's the timeline.

    05:59-06:18

Daniel said from the time of that decree, until the anointed one is cut off, that period of time is going to be 69 weeks or 483 years.

    06:21-06:24

This is one of the most incredible things about God's word.

    06:25-06:30

From the time of that decree in Daniel's day, Artaxerxes said we're gonna rebuild Jerusalem.

    06:31-06:35

If you go forward in history, 483 years, do you know what you get to?

    06:37-06:38

    The crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

    06:41-06:46

To the day it was prophesied exactly as God said it would be.

    06:47-07:00

So those 69 weeks, those 483 years spanned Daniel's time from his prophecy until, as he said, the anointed one is cut off, meaning Jesus Christ, the anointed one, crucified.

    07:02-07:05

Okay, and you're like, wait a minute, you said there were 70 weeks.

    07:05-07:16

Well, Daniel said that the 70th week, that period of seven years is beyond the 69 weeks.

    07:18-07:20

And that's what Jesus is talking about here.

    07:21-07:22

    What does that mean?

    07:23-07:24

    Here's the short version.

    07:24-07:31

There's a period of seven years that is yet future, that is going to be a time of tribulation.

    07:32-07:39

Daniel talked about that and Jesus talked about that and in the book of Revelation, that's exactly what John is talking about.

    07:40-07:48

Okay, so what we're talking about with this seven year tribulation, if you want the whole story, you have to read the book of Revelation.

    07:50-07:55

But the passage that we're looking at today, Jesus is giving the short version, okay?

    07:56-07:57

In other words, the CliffsNotes version.

    07:57-07:59

    Are CliffsNotes still a thing?

    08:00-08:01

    Are they still a thing?

    08:01-08:09

When I was in school, there were CliffsNotes, and CliffsNotes were these little yellow books that we read instead of reading the big book that we were supposed to read.

    08:09-08:12

It was just like a summary of the big book.

    08:12-08:14

Well, Jesus is giving the CliffsNotes version.

    08:17-08:18

Young people, do you know what I'm talking about?

    08:19-08:20

Yeah, do you know what CliffsNotes are?

    08:21-08:21

    No?

    08:22-08:23

That's because you have the internet.

    08:24-08:24

    You know what?

    08:24-08:26

When I was a kid, we didn't have the Internet.

    08:28-08:34

We had we had books and card catalogs and CliffsNotes.

    08:36-08:39

So I'm just I sound a little bitter about that.

    08:40-08:42

    OK, maybe I am.

    08:43-08:46

All right, spoiler alert, this is the countdown of final events.

    08:49-08:51

Jesus describing the seven year tribulation.

    08:51-08:56

So on your outline, we're counting down 54321, Jesus said, these are the last five events of history.

    08:57-08:59

OK, these are the last five events of history.

    08:59-09:00

These things are all in the future.

    09:01-09:02

    Number one is abomination.

    09:03-09:05

    Number one is abomination.

    09:05-09:06

    Look at verse 14 again.

    09:08-09:17

Kicking everything off in the tribulation, Jesus said, but when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be.

    09:21-09:25

And in parentheses, it says, let the reader understand what a pause.

    09:25-09:26

Now, this is described out this time.

    09:26-09:31

Revelation, chapter 13, describes the abomination of desolation.

    09:32-09:32

    What is that?

    09:33-09:39

Well, Daniel spoke of him three times in Daniel, chapter seven, Daniel, chapter nine, Daniel, chapter 11.

    09:39-09:40

    What does that mean?

    09:41-09:44

Well, breaking it down, the word abomination means blasphemous.

    09:47-09:51

All about things that God hates and desolation means destruction.

    09:53-09:57

Meaning there is a person coming in the future.

    09:58-10:02

That is destructive and he hates God.

    10:04-10:16

All right, the scripture talks so much about this guy, Revelation six says that this man kicks off the end times, just as Jesus describes here, he's also known as the Antichrist.

    10:19-10:21

Here's how blasphemous the Antichrist will be.

    10:23-10:24

    Understand how I mean this.

    10:24-10:26

He's going to be Satan's version of Jesus.

    10:27-10:28

Like, what do you mean by that?

    10:28-10:30

    He's going to be popular.

    10:31-10:33

He's going to, the Bible says he's going to have authority.

    10:35-10:41

The worst is the Bible says he's going to mimic the death and the resurrection of Jesus.

    10:41-10:42

    Did you know that?

    10:42-10:43

    He's going to mimic that.

    10:45-10:51

But apparently, he's going to die, Revelation tells us, and he's going to raise from the dead.

    10:51-10:52

    Is that real?

    10:52-10:54

    Is that demonic?

    10:54-10:55

    Is it fake?

    10:55-10:56

    I don't know.

    10:57-10:58

    But I do know this.

    10:58-11:13

He is going to emulate the death and the resurrection of Jesus and get the whole world to worship him, saying, "Everyone needs to worship the one who was raised from the dead." Does that sound familiar?

    11:14-11:22

the message of the church and Satan is going to have his Antichrist. It's blasphemous.

    11:24-11:32

Getting people to worship the satanic version of Jesus, for lack of a better description.

    11:34-11:45

This guy so much said about him in scripture, just like Jesus, I want to give you the close notes version and hopefully what's your appetite to read some more. But this man is going to be elevated as a world leader.

    11:46-11:47

He's going to be charismatic, okay?

    11:47-12:00

When we hear Antichrist, we think of, you know, snidely whiplash and with the black cape and sinister laugh and he's not going to be like that, Church, he's going to be charismatic, everybody's going to love him.

    12:00-12:02

He's going to be a celebrity, okay?

    12:02-12:09

He's going to be on the cover of People Magazine and Time Magazine and he's going to, the whole world is going to love this guy.

    12:13-12:34

Elevated as a world leader, the Bible says he's going to make a peace treaty with Israel and then halfway through the tribulation He's going to show his true colors That's where Jesus said When you see this Antichrist this abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be. What does that mean?

    12:36-12:42

In the future Israel is going to rebuild the temple. Did you know that there's plans for that right now?

    12:42-12:44

    They're working on that now.

    12:45-12:49

And they have the schematics for all the priestly robes and the temple and the furniture.

    12:49-12:51

They're working on that right now.

    12:52-13:02

And eventually that temple is going to be built and this Antichrist is going to set up his throne inside the temple.

    13:03-13:05

That's going to be his headquarters.

    13:05-13:07

That's going to be the place where he receives worship.

    13:07-13:09

That's what Jesus is talking about here.

    13:10-13:17

This Antichrist is going to be where he shouldn't be, which is in the temple.

    13:18-13:18

    Okay?

    13:20-13:21

    Last one is stuff.

    13:23-13:29

The Bible says he's going to slaughter God's people, Israel, and all who come to faith during the tribulation.

    13:31-13:32

The Antichrist is going to kill them.

    13:33-13:39

He's going to demand worship, and the Bible says that he's going to force everyone to to get his mark on them.

    13:40-13:43

He's going to force everyone, you have to get this mark.

    13:43-13:47

And if you don't have this mark, you can't buy or sell.

    13:48-13:52

Let's be honest, the generation before us, this would have been inconceivable.

    13:52-13:53

    How could that happen?

    13:53-14:05

But in our day of everything having barcodes and everything tied to the internet and money transactions through PayPal and things like that, you know what I'm talking about.

    14:05-14:07

This would be real easy to set up.

    14:08-14:09

That's what he's going to do.

    14:09-14:14

Unless you take his mark, unless you swear allegiance to him, you're not gonna be able to buy anything.

    14:16-14:20

No gas, no groceries, no anything.

    14:22-14:27

Unless you take his mark, which is going to motivate a lot of people to take the mark.

    14:31-14:35

But notice that Mark says that This is for future readers.

    14:36-14:37

    You notice that parenthetical statement?

    14:37-14:40

He says, "Let the reader understand." Mark inserted that.

    14:42-14:42

    Why?

    14:43-14:45

Because the Antichrist was yet future.

    14:47-15:02

Some people think that the Antichrist came in the first century, and Mark here is making this parenthetical statement to say, "No, he hasn't come yet." But I'm writing this stuff down because someday people are going to be sitting in a middle school cafeteria talking about this, reading this.

    15:02-15:08

He goes, I want you people reading this throughout history to understand that this stuff is coming.

    15:11-15:19

The thing that kicks off the tribulation is abomination, the Antichrist on the scene.

    15:20-15:22

    Secondly, write this down, evacuation.

    15:24-15:25

    Evacuation.

    15:27-15:33

Jesus said, okay, so when you see this, you're gonna see this guy, this Antichrist, seated in the temple.

    15:34-15:36

So what should we do about that?

    15:36-15:40

He says, and let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.

    15:40-15:51

But the one who is on the house top, not go down or enter his house to take anything out and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak.

    15:51-15:56

And alas, for women who are pregnant, for those who are nursing infants in those days, pray.

    15:57-16:00

It may not happen in winter.

    16:02-16:04

These events are described through Revelation chapter 12.

    16:07-16:17

This is an obvious urgency for those who come to Christ during the tribulation Jesus says is simply this, run.

    16:19-16:31

Remember last week, I believe it was in verse 11, Jesus said they're going to drag you before councils in the synagogue, you're going to be beaten, and you're going to give testimony And the Holy Spirit is going to give you the words and the gospel is going to go forth.

    16:31-16:32

    Remember that?

    16:34-16:40

Not during this period, this isn't stand your ground, share the gospel, you know, try to win them.

    16:42-16:45

Jesus didn't say this was evangelism time, what did he say?

    16:45-16:46

    He said, run.

    16:47-16:54

When you see this happen, he says, you have got to drop everything, don't turn back, you have to run.

    16:55-16:57

    Because when they come.

    16:59-17:04

They're not coming to hear your story, they don't want to hear you talk about Jesus, they're not interested.

    17:06-17:09

If they show up at your house, it is going to be to kill you.

    17:10-17:17

That's why Jesus said, run, run, get out of there, don't look back, don't turn around, don't grab anything, get out of there.

    17:20-17:21

    It sounds pretty intense.

    17:21-17:22

    Look at verse 19.

    17:22-17:32

Jesus said, for those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of creation that God created until now and never will be.

    17:34-17:38

Jesus said this period of time is going to be unlike anything that's ever happened.

    17:42-17:43

Did you think Al Qaeda was bad?

    17:44-17:49

See, al-Qaeda, that was sort of the evil flavor of the year.

    17:49-17:53

And then what came along after that was-- what's the thing now?

    17:53-17:53

    ISIS, right?

    17:54-17:57

And next year, it's going to be something else.

    18:00-18:03

All of those are going to look like nothing.

    18:05-18:09

You hear ISIS driving people out of their homes and beheading children.

    18:12-18:14

That's going to look like nothing compared to this.

    18:15-18:18

Jesus said this period of history that's coming is unlike anything that's ever happened.

    18:20-18:21

It is going to be so horrific.

    18:24-18:29

Jesus said there's never been anything like it nor will there ever be anything else like it.

    18:30-18:31

    Get out of there.

    18:32-18:40

In verse 20 he says, "And if the Lord had not "cut short the days, no human being would be saved." You see that?

    18:41-18:49

This period of seven years, Jesus said the reason that the tribulation is only seven years is because if it lasted longer, every one of God's people would be slaughtered.

    18:50-18:52

That's how horrific this is going to be.

    18:53-18:54

But then look at the next statement.

    18:55-19:05

He says, "But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days." God's not going to allow this for long.

    19:08-19:26

But for the elect, for the saved, for the people that God chose, for the people that have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, God's going to cut short the days and limit it to only the seven-year period.

    19:27-19:31

Jesus said, first of all, you're going to see an abomination, and then there's going to be an evacuation.

    19:32-19:35

Thirdly, this is going to sound very familiar, but indoctrination.

    19:37-19:39

Look at verses 21 and 22 with me.

    19:40-19:50

It says, "And then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here's the Christ,' or 'Look, there he is,' do not believe it.

    19:50-20:10

For false Christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect." During this time of the Tribulation, There are going to be things like natural, quote unquote, natural disasters.

    20:13-20:13

    Read Revelation.

    20:15-20:22

There's going to be death, and there's going to be pestilence, and there's going to be plagues, and there's going to be wars, and there's going to be global destruction.

    20:23-20:29

And obviously, during this time, you're going to have people all over the world going, what is going on?

    20:30-20:32

What in the world is going on?

    20:33-20:35

And people are going to be looking for answers.

    20:37-20:43

So it's gonna be a perfect time for these phonies to stand up and say, "You don't need to worry about it.

    20:45-20:47

    "I am the anointed one.

    20:47-20:50

"I am the Christ, I can make sense of this.

    20:52-21:37

"Be a follower of mine, I can help you understand "and navigate through this time of turmoil." People claiming to be Christ, We talked about that last week right there. There's people running around the world today. I listed their names for you last week There are people running around the world today saying I'm Jesus. I'm the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and It's going to be happening more and more and more and just as those people I mentioned last week have followers During this period you're going to have all of these false teachers get up and get all of these people to buy into This garbage that they're selling.

    21:38-21:42

Jesus said, "Don't believe it." Don't believe it.

    21:42-21:45

Jot this down. When Jesus returns, everyone will know.

    21:46-21:47

    Everyone will know.

    21:48-21:54

That's important because there are some cults today that teach that Jesus already came back.

    21:54-21:54

    Do you know that?

    21:55-22:02

There's some cults that say, "Oh yeah, Jesus came back like in the 1930s, And he was only here for a little while, but here's what he did.

    22:02-22:03

    He went back to heaven.

    22:04-22:05

Like, why didn't I hear about this?

    22:08-22:16

And then you have these other people running around, so I'm the Christ and I'm return. Now, Jesus made it very clear that when he returns, literally everyone will know it.

    22:17-22:19

    Every eye will see him.

    22:20-22:22

OK, so there's not going to be any guesswork.

    22:22-22:28

I wonder if that's Jesus, because spoiler alert, Jesus actually talks about that in this passage. You're going to know.

    22:28-23:29

Okay, you don't have to wonder if you like turn on CNN in a year like hey We think this guy is the Son of God. You don't have to wonder he's not Because Jesus said when he returns everyone is going to know for sure All right, so don't fall for this stuff Notice Jesus said that they're going to perform signs and wonders I've thought about that a lot of these fake signs are these like Magicians is this stuff that's demonic I Don't know But I do know The true believers are not going to fall for it because notice Jesus said to lead astray if possible the elect Is it possible to lead the elect astray? No everyone and their act is going to be pretty convincing.

    23:32-23:33

The elect aren't going to fall for it.

    23:34-23:37

People who know Jesus Christ are not going to fall for it.

    23:39-23:42

Look at verse 23, Jesus said, "But be on guard.

    23:43-23:52

"I have told you all things beforehand." Jesus said, "You can take this to the bank.

    23:56-24:04

In church, when we talk about God's Word, I understand a lot of the, it's a history book and a lot of it obviously took place in the past.

    24:05-24:14

Sometimes we can look at God's Word and have a much easier time understanding past history, right?

    24:14-24:21

Like here were the kings of Israel and here's what was happening in Daniel's day and these were the nations involved.

    24:21-24:25

We can look back at history and confirm it with secular history and archaeology and such.

    24:25-24:34

Like, oh yeah, I believe the Bible's true because everything, everything that's written records history.

    24:34-24:38

But sometimes I think we have a harder time with the future.

    24:40-24:42

Is it really going to go down that way?

    24:43-24:47

I mean, when Jesus is talking about that stuff, do you really think this is how it's going to happen?

    24:49-24:52

I would suggest to you that, first of all, was he right about the temple?

    24:55-24:56

    Nailed that one, right?

    24:56-24:59

Not one stone left upon another, that was literally fulfilled.

    25:00-25:09

Okay, and then he said, after that, there was going to be a period of history that was full of disease and earthquakes and wars and persecutions of his believers.

    25:10-25:11

Was he right about that one?

    25:13-25:18

So when he talks about this period of future tribulation, do you think he's right about this?

    25:21-25:25

I'd say looking at his batting average, you can take this to the back.

    25:27-25:29

Everything perfectly predicted this is to.

    25:30-25:38

Abomination, evacuation, indoctrination, counting down, number two, delumination.

    25:40-25:41

    Delumination.

    25:42-25:44

Like, whoa, I'm not sure that's a word.

    25:45-25:46

I wasn't sure either, but it is.

    25:47-25:48

    It's actually slang.

    25:51-25:52

    What does it mean?

    25:53-25:54

It means to turn off the lights.

    25:56-25:56

    That's what it means.

    25:57-26:03

And Jesus said, that's the next time you're going to have the Antichrist show up and then this mass evacuation and all these false teachers.

    26:03-26:06

The next thing is the lights are going to be turned out.

    26:08-26:19

Jesus said, but in those days after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light and the stars will be falling from heaven and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

    26:22-26:29

Joel, chapter two and three, talk about this, Isaiah, chapter thirty four talks about this.

    26:29-26:36

The Bible is crystal clear that before Jesus returns, he's going to turn out the lights.

    26:37-26:39

Okay, talk about a grand entrance.

    26:43-26:46

We're not just talking about flicking a switch on the wall.

    26:47-26:56

He's going to flick the switch on the wall of heaven and turn off the sun, the moon, and the stars, rendering everything pitch black.

    27:01-27:02

How intense is this going to be?

    27:03-27:10

Studying this week, Luke chapter 21 and verse 26, it says that men will be fainting.

    27:11-27:14

As I read the Bible, maybe you're like me, you kind of visualize what that looks like.

    27:14-27:53

And I just, you know, you kind of read that men are fainting, like the lights go out, men are like, "Oh, catch me." But I did a little studying, and you know that word fainting, Luke 21, 26, literally translates "breathing out," or it could also be translated "heart failing." So when these lights go out, it's going to be so terrifying that the Bible says people are going to be literally scared to death.

    27:54-28:02

So these men aren't fainting, like get a, you know, get something to fan them in the smelling salts in a bucket of cold water.

    28:03-28:07

People are going to be having heart attacks because this is so terrifying.

    28:08-28:18

With all of these things going on, the wars and the pestilences and all of these people being slaughtered for their faith, people being beheaded and executed.

    28:20-28:21

    And all of a sudden.

    28:23-28:24

All of the lights go out.

    28:25-28:26

    In the heavens.

    28:28-28:38

The sun turned off, the moon turned off, stars not just turned off, but falling from the sky, people are going to be having heart attacks.

    28:40-28:41

    Because this is so terrifying.

    28:44-28:58

Look at verse 26, Jesus said, and then and then and then, and that takes us to the last thing, right down coronation, the of the king. And then.

    29:00-29:06

And then they will see the son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

    29:08-29:12

And wait a minute, how are they going to see Jesus if he just turned the lights off?

    29:13-29:22

Not going to be a problem because the most brilliant dazzling light anyone has ever experienced is going to be coming from Jesus.

    29:23-29:27

Okay, when it says he's coming with great power and glory, that's what that's talking about.

    29:27-29:31

Here, the Bible says that there's no sun in heaven.

    29:32-29:33

    Why?

    29:33-29:37

Because the Lamb himself, Jesus himself, is the light of heaven.

    29:37-29:39

    He radiates light.

    29:40-29:51

So when he turns the lights off, everyone's going to see him come because he's going to be a blinding, dazzling light coming from the sky.

    29:52-29:56

    Incredible, absolutely mind -blowing stuff.

    29:58-30:06

Notice that Jesus says that he will be returning as he left.

    30:08-30:11

It says that the Son of Man will be coming in clouds.

    30:13-30:18

Daniel talks about that in Daniel 7, 13, Acts chapter one, verse 11.

    30:18-30:20

Remember the angel said to the disciples, why are you staring into heaven?

    30:21-30:23

He's coming back the same way you saw him leave.

    30:23-30:23

    What does that mean?

    30:24-30:27

You saw him leave into the clouds.

    30:27-30:30

He's going to be coming back in the clouds the same way that he left.

    30:33-30:37

Okay, it's not going to be some sneaky second coming that he came and left.

    30:37-30:43

He's going to be coming from the sky and everyone is going to see him.

    30:46-30:47

Then what's he going to do?

    30:49-30:55

It says in verse 27, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds.

    30:57-30:58

    What's that?

    30:59-31:00

From the ends of the earth.

    31:00-31:02

    It's just a saying.

    31:02-31:03

It means from the four corners of the earth.

    31:04-31:11

Meaning he's going to gather all of his people from all over, not just the earth, from the ends of the earth and to the ends of heaven.

    31:12-31:16

During that time, Jesus is going to gather all of his people together.

    31:16-31:19

The people that are in heaven coming with him.

    31:20-31:22

His people that are all over the earth.

    31:24-31:26

He's going to send his angels and say, gather them up.

    31:27-31:28

    Let's gather everybody up.

    31:30-31:31

    This day of the Lord.

    31:33-31:42

I want you to turn with me as we close to Revelation, Chapter 19, I just want to look at a couple of verses that describe the return.

    31:42-31:45

Like I said, Jesus gave the CliffsNotes version, but.

    31:47-31:49

I want us to look at the full version here.

    31:54-31:57

    Revelation, chapter 19, verses 11 through 16.

    32:00-32:00

    Is the full picture.

    32:04-32:07

John writes, Then I saw heaven open to behold a white horse.

    32:09-32:11

The one sitting on it is called faithful and true.

    32:13-32:19

And in righteousness, he judges and makes war.

    32:21-32:24

Understand that the first time Jesus came, it wasn't to judge.

    32:25-32:26

    It was to what?

    32:27-32:27

    To say.

    32:30-32:34

John says in the second coming of Christ, he's coming to do what?

    32:35-32:37

    Judge and make war.

    32:37-32:43

"As his eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems." Those are crowns.

    32:44-32:51

"He has a name written that no one knows but himself." You know what that is?

    32:53-32:54

    No, you don't.

    32:54-33:03

"He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood." When I read that, I thought that that blood had to do with the atonement, right?

    33:03-33:05

Being washed in the blood of the Lamb.

    33:05-33:09

We say, "I always thought that that blood had to do with the atonement." That's not.

    33:09-33:11

That's not his blood at all.

    33:12-33:19

Actually Isaiah 63 talks about this, that the blood on the robe is actually the blood of his enemies.

    33:20-33:26

The blood of the people who have hated him and rejected him, these people that he's coming to make war against.

    33:28-33:29

    It's their blood.

    33:30-33:31

    They cover his garments.

    33:34-33:36

The name by which he is called is the Word of God.

    33:38-33:44

The armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses.

    33:45-33:46

    Who's that?

    33:46-33:47

Those are his people coming back with him.

    33:48-33:49

    Those are the saints.

    33:50-33:55

Those are people that have received Jesus Christ, born again, and have died before this period of time.

    33:55-33:57

    They're coming back with Jesus.

    33:58-34:03

It says from his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations.

    34:03-34:05

He will rule them with a rod of iron.

    34:06-34:10

He will tread the wide crest of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.

    34:12-34:15

On his robe and on his thigh, he has a name written.

    34:17-34:20

King of Kings, the Lord of Lords.

    34:21-34:23

On his robe and on his thigh, this name is written.

    34:23-34:33

I imagine this is sort of like a banner or some kind of a sash that he has that as Jesus is seated on the horse, it's draped over him and up over his leg.

    34:34-34:35

I imagine this is how John saw that.

    34:38-34:42

And you read that and you ask, is this terrifying?

    34:43-35:12

To think that Jesus is going to come back and the annihilation of his enemies is compared to making wine putting the grapes in the basin and stomping them out and the grape juice symbolizing the blood. That's what it's going to look like when Jesus comes back second time. Is that terrifying? It certainly is. As I close, the question is should you be scared? The answer is you don't have to.

    35:14-35:22

One of the questions as a pastor I get asked a lot concerning the Tribulation is this, people ask me, "Am I gonna be here for this?

    35:23-35:25

"Am I going to be here for the tribulation?

    35:25-35:36

"Am I going to have to, I mean, I've read Revelation, "am I going to be here to experience that stuff?" And I don't believe that we will.

    35:38-35:51

The Bible talks about a rapture, and if you get five pastors in a room to discuss the rapture, you're gonna get seven different opinions when it takes place, okay?

    35:52-35:57

I believe that the rapture takes place before the tribulation, and I wanna give you two reasons why.

    35:58-36:00

Okay, the first reason is this.

    36:03-36:10

In Revelation chapter three and verse 10, Jesus in these passages, he was giving messages to the churches.

    36:11-36:17

He makes a promise to the church in Philadelphia, it's really for all Christians who embrace his promises.

    36:18-36:34

He said, "I will keep you from the hour of trial "that is coming on the whole world." Jesus said, "There's a period of time "where there's tribulation or trial, "and it's going to be global." Has that happened yet?

    36:35-36:35

    No.

    36:36-36:44

I believe he's talking about the tribulation in that verse, and he's saying, "I'm going to keep my people "away from that." That's literally what the text says.

    36:45-36:47

you're going to be taken out of that situation.

    36:50-36:53

There's another reason I believe that we are going to be raptured before the tribulation.

    36:55-36:57

And it doesn't have to do with what the Bible says.

    36:58-37:00

It actually has to do with what the Bible doesn't say.

    37:01-37:02

Okay, but what does that mean?

    37:03-37:11

Well, if you read the book of Revelation, Revelation chapters two and three, Jesus is talking to the church, the church, the church, the church, the church.

    37:11-37:29

You know, Thyatira and Smyrna and Philadelphia, The church, the church, he's talking to the church, the church, interestingly, with all this talking to the church, when you get to the part of Revelation that talks about the tribulation, the church isn't mentioned one time, not one time.

    37:30-37:40

Israel's mentioned, Revelation 7 and 14 says that God has 12,000 Israelites, each from the tribe, set aside that are going to evangelize during this time.

    37:40-37:43

That's how all these people are going to come to Christ during the tribulation.

    37:43-37:50

God's going to have 144,000 Jews sharing the gospel during the tribulation.

    37:51-38:02

Certainly unbelievers are talked about, and demonic activity, and all of these things are talked about in Revelation 6 through 19, but the church isn't mentioned one time.

    38:03-38:13

And if according to the New Testament, the church is the place where God is at work, where a body of believers, The Bible calls us the household of God.

    38:15-38:22

If the church is where God is at work, why wouldn't the church be mentioned at all during the tribulation?

    38:24-38:47

Unless, Jesus meant what he said to the church, when he said, "I'm going to keep you "from this hour of tribulation that's coming." So I believe, for many reasons, So those are my top two reasons I believe that the church is going to be raptured before the tribulation.

    38:51-38:55

But you know, God is going to judge all sin.

    38:56-39:05

And I want to talk, if there's anybody here today who doesn't know Jesus Christ, maybe you're hearing this stuff and you're like, wow, this is scary.

    39:05-39:38

I don't know. I don't know if I've received Christ. I haven't been born again. I haven't received the gospel I'd be remiss if I didn't tell you You know, the Bible says that we're all guilty of sin We're all guilty of sin Like I've never murdered anyone well sin is more than just what you do Sin is who you are You know why you have sinful thoughts?

    39:40-39:41

Because by nature you're a sinner.

    39:43-39:44

You know why you have sinful attitudes?

    39:46-39:47

    By nature, you're a sinner.

    39:49-39:50

You know why you say simple things?

    39:52-39:53

    By nature, you're a sinner.

    39:56-39:58

Why do you commit sinful actions?

    39:58-39:59

Because by nature, you're a sinner.

    40:00-40:06

The Bible says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

    40:08-40:10

So listen, I'm talking to somebody here who doesn't know the Lord.

    40:11-40:15

Listen, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

    40:17-40:18

    You're in that category.

    40:19-40:20

    You're one of the all.

    40:24-40:26

And it doesn't matter what you've done.

    40:28-40:35

And I found the people going one of two sides of the extreme, they either say, well, I've never really done anything that bad.

    40:38-40:42

And then you have people that say, I've done things that are so bad, I don't know if I can be.

    40:45-40:48

Listen, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

    40:50-40:51

    I want you to imagine.

    40:52-40:54

Standing on the shore of New Jersey.

    40:56-41:01

For me, Jane Auer, one of our elders, and Ben Roethlisberger.

    41:04-41:05

And we each have a football.

    41:07-41:12

And our assignment is we need to throw that football across the Atlantic Ocean and hit Great Britain.

    41:14-41:18

And I throw my football, and it makes it out a few feet.

    41:20-41:22

And Ben Roethlisberger throws his football.

    41:24-41:26

    He throws it 100 yards.

    41:28-41:30

And Jay Nauer gets up with his football and he throws his.

    41:31-41:34

He throws his football 150 yards.

    41:36-41:37

The question is who made it?

    41:38-41:39

    Who made it?

    41:41-41:43

We all fell short, didn't we?

    41:44-41:45

    We all fell short.

    41:45-41:48

We're like, well, Jay was a lot closer than Ben Roethlisberger.

    41:48-41:49

    It doesn't matter.

    41:50-41:52

You see, that's how it is with sin.

    41:52-41:57

Whether you just committed a couple of little sins or whether you've murdered somebody.

    41:59-42:02

You're guilty of sin, you've fallen short of God's glory.

    42:05-42:10

Actually the Bible says that if you've broken God's law at any one point, you're guilty of the whole law.

    42:11-42:16

James tells us why, because rejecting the law is rejecting the law giver.

    42:17-42:23

Understand, if you're sitting here today and you're like, you know what, the only thing I've ever done in my life. One time I was 12 years old.

    42:23-42:25

I told a lie. Guess what?

    42:25-42:30

You're a sinner. And you're guilty of breaking all of God's law.

    42:33-42:39

And that's bad news. Because if you're a rebellious sinner, God's not going to let you into heaven.

    42:40-42:45

He's not because God is perfect and God is holy and he's not going to let.

    42:46-42:48

    Any unholiness in his presence.

    42:50-42:54

But the good news is there is an escape plan.

    42:55-42:57

You know, just a few weeks we're going to be celebrating Christmas.

    43:00-43:01

See, this is the real celebration.

    43:02-43:06

It's the fact that God became a man.

    43:09-43:11

Why did God become a man?

    43:11-43:16

He became a man because he wanted to show his love for you.

    43:19-43:20

He wanted to pay your debt.

    43:23-43:25

So listen, it doesn't matter what you've done.

    43:26-43:28

It doesn't matter what you've done.

    43:30-43:37

There's not a person in this room, there's not a person on this planet that is too far gone from God's grace.

    43:41-43:50

If you feel that way, you have to evaluate, am I really saying that my sin is greater than God's grace?

    43:50-43:51

    Am I really saying that?

    43:57-44:32

So for you, if you're not sure where you are with Jesus Christ, for you, I want you to recognize two things. That is this, first of all you have to recognize that you are a helpless sinner. What do you mean by that? You're helpless. You can't do enough good works to try to earn priority points with God. It's not going to be through your church attendance or saying the right prayers. You can't do it. You're helpless because you're guilty.

    44:34-44:36

    You have to recognize that.

    44:37-44:39

But you have to recognize something else too.

    44:42-44:43

    And it is this.

    44:45-44:46

God is a God of forgiving love.

    44:49-44:51

Here's the thing, you have to recognize both of those things.

    44:53-45:01

For the person that says, "Well, of course I'm a sinner, I realize that, but there's no way God will forgive me." then you've undermined the fact that God has forgiving love.

    45:03-45:11

But if you're a person that says, well, I know that God's a God of love, so I can just do whatever I want, now you're undermining the fact that you're a helpless sinner.

    45:14-45:23

The way that you receive Jesus Christ, the way that you can be born again into eternal life, you have to recognize those two things.

    45:24-45:27

I am a helpless sinner, but God is a God of forgiving love.

    45:28-45:33

You have to embrace those two truths and until you do, you're not ready to receive.

    45:36-45:45

You know, as we read this passage here from Mark, he describes a coming day of judgment and there's going to be a day that it's going to be too late.

    45:46-45:49

There's going to be a day that it's going to be too late.

    45:50-45:52

The best news is this, it's not today.

    45:54-45:55

Today is a day of grace.

    45:55-46:06

And if there's somebody here, as you know, I've known for a long time that I need to get serious about my walk with the Lord, and I just haven't.

    46:06-46:16

I've been putting it off, and I've been too focused on career or family or hobby, or I just, I haven't really stopped to think about the fact that I'm not going to be here forever.

    46:16-46:18

    I'm heading somewhere eternally.

    46:21-46:22

    Today's the day of grace.

    46:24-46:25

Can you bow your heads with me please?

    46:28-46:39

This terrible time of tribulation that Jesus described and this swift judgment that's coming upon the earth, you can be saved from that.

    46:41-46:50

The eternal hell that Jesus describes in other places in God's word, you can be saved from that.

    46:53-47:02

in heaven, only you know people's hearts. I don't know where people stand with you, God.

    47:05-47:30

But I do know that there is a real sense of urgency because none of us are going to be here forever, and time, every second that passes is another grain of sand through the And it's coming to an end and things are being prepared right now for these events to take place and your son is ready to return.

    47:34-47:36

Father, this passage is so terrifying.

    47:39-47:50

Father, I thank you for the truth of your word that we don't have to be scared of your Because Jesus took your wrath upon himself when he died for our sins.

    47:53-48:10

Jesus rose from the dead to give us the promise that we too will live eternally with you. Father I pray for anyone here today who either doesn't know you or they're not sure. Father I pray that you would not give them a second's rest.

    48:12-48:21

I pray that every time they close their eyes, they would think about these events that Jesus described and it would terrify them.

    48:23-48:35

I pray, Father, we bring them to the place where they would meditate upon the truth of your word, that you love us and the message of Jesus Christ is ultimately you saving us from yourself.

    48:35-48:39

You're delivering us from your own wrath that is coming.

    48:40-48:49

And you're restoring that love relationship that you intended to have with your people before sin came into the world.

    48:51-49:00

Father, might your Holy Spirit grab the hearts in this room who don't know you and wrestle with them and not let them go.

    49:02-49:08

they cry out to you and say, "Yes, I realize that I'm a sinner and I have rejected God.

    49:09-49:12

    I realize that I can't save myself.

    49:13-49:20

I realize that I'm guilty." But your word tells us of this lavish grace that you've poured upon us through Jesus Christ.

    49:21-49:26

Your word tells us that you want to forgive me, you want to restore me, you want to adopt me as your child.

    49:28-49:35

that God you want what's best for me, but you're not going to drag me to heaven kicking and screaming.

    49:37-49:44

You have presented this gift before me and have pleaded with me to accept it.

    49:46-49:47

    Father, we thank you.

    49:50-49:53

We thank you for your grace in Jesus Christ.

    49:55-50:00

May it never be a small thing in our sight.

    50:02-50:05

    In Jesus' name, Amen.

  • 00:00-00:04

Turn to the Gospel According to Mark and chapter 13.

    00:05-00:10

And we're going to be doing a mini-series just on chapter 13.

    00:12-00:23

And our little series within a series I've entitled "Spoiler Alert." You know what a spoiler alert is?

    00:23-00:24

Do you know what that is?

    00:26-00:35

I'm not 20 anymore, so I have to try to stay up to speed on the lingo that the kids are using.

    00:36-00:38

But do you know what a spoiler alert is?

    00:41-00:46

If you don't know what a spoiler alert is, I'm sure everyone here does, because you're way much cooler than me.

    00:49-00:51

This is what a spoiler alert is.

    00:51-01:01

If you go online to look up a movie or a television program, you're going to find thousands of pages reviewing the movie or the TV show.

    01:02-01:05

Maybe you're thinking about, you see a preview for a movie on TV.

    01:05-01:08

I'd like to know more about that movie and you want to look it up online.

    01:09-01:25

Well, if that website is about to reveal a key part of the plot of the movie, it's a courtesy for them to write spoiler alert, so that you can stop reading if you don't wanna know ahead of time.

    01:26-01:27

    Okay, does that make sense?

    01:28-01:37

So if you're like, I don't wanna know how the movie ends, they put spoiler alert, like, okay, I'm gonna stop reading now.

    01:38-01:41

And so why did we call this series spoiler alert?

    01:42-01:49

Because Jesus in Mark chapter 13 talks about how the world is going to end.

    01:51-02:00

So if there's anyone here who is not interested in what the Son of God says about the end of the world, I have something to tell you.

    02:02-02:03

    Spoiler alert.

    02:04-02:05

Okay, go wait in your car.

    02:07-02:08

    And do not listen online.

    02:10-02:16

But if like me, you would like to know, then let's see what God's Word has to say.

    02:17-02:17

    All in favor?

    02:18-02:20

    All right, the post.

    02:21-02:22

    All right, motion carried.

    02:23-02:23

    Let's pray.

    02:24-02:33

Father in heaven, we so often turn to your word for edification, and today is no exception.

    02:34-02:38

But perhaps more than usual today we turn to your word for education.

    02:38-02:45

And I pray, Father, that we would all be Bible students.

    02:47-02:59

This is a tough passage because a lot of us come with things that we've been told or preconceived notions and I'm sure for some here, this is all brand new information.

    03:01-03:12

So I pray that you would open our hearts and our minds to what your word actually says, not what we thought it said, not what somebody else maybe told us it said, but let us look and see what your word actually teaches.

    03:14-03:15

Help us to be Bible students.

    03:19-03:23

We pray in Jesus' name, and all of God's people said, Amen.

    03:24-03:25

    Mark chapter 13.

    03:26-03:33

I encourage you to take notes if you have a bulletin and an outline with it.

    03:33-03:35

I encourage you to take some notes.

    03:35-03:41

But first of all, at the top of your outline, a compliment, a prediction, and a question.

    03:44-03:49

to sort of set the stage for this extended teaching that Jesus gives in Mark 13.

    03:50-03:53

Recall that Jesus made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem.

    03:54-04:03

And we spent a lot of time on Wednesday of Passion Week where Jesus was in the temple and people were challenging Jesus.

    04:03-04:06

And Jesus was teaching the people.

    04:06-04:07

    And look at verse 1.

    04:07-04:17

It says, "And as He came out of the temple, One of his disciples said to him, you're like, "Well, which disciple?

    04:18-04:25

If God wanted us to know, He would have told us." So, my conclusion is it doesn't matter, right?

    04:25-04:26

    It just doesn't matter.

    04:27-05:07

One of his disciples said to him, "Look, teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!" This temple is even more glorious it is. This was actually the third temple that was built. It's known as Herod's Temple and it was built over a period of decades. And it was overlaid with pure gold. And I read this week from a couple sources. They said when the Sun was reflecting off of the wall, it would blind you. It was so dazzling.

    05:08-05:39

So I imagine this is what this disciple was referencing when they came out and turned around and, "Look teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings." I don't know, I kind of laughed to myself because Wednesday in the temple, I would have thought that the disciples might have left with maybe a little bit of a bad taste in their mouth because everybody was attacking Jesus.

    05:39-05:53

where they just kept coming in waves, attacking Jesus, attacking Jesus, attacking Jesus, and then Jesus condemns the religious leaders, and then they walk out the door, and they say, "It's a pretty nice building though, isn't it?"

    05:53-05:54

    (sigh)

    05:57-05:58

Look what Jesus said in verse 2.

    06:00-06:03

Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings?

    06:06-06:13

will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." Wow!

    06:14-06:19

This glorious, magnificent building in Jesus' response is it's all coming down.

    06:20-06:23

Actually, this was fulfilled in 70 A.D.

    06:24-06:34

There was a Jewish rebellion and the Romans came in and stamped it out quite handily.

    06:34-06:39

actually destroyed the temple, leveling it.

    06:40-06:56

I read this week that they actually burned the temple, and they burned it so that that gold that was overlaid the stones actually melted and went in between the bricks, so that when the looters came after the fact, what do you think they did?

    06:56-06:59

Let's break these bricks apart and get the gold that melted inside.

    07:00-07:04

And I believe Jesus' choice of words was very intentional.

    07:04-07:06

There's not going to be one stone on top of another.

    07:06-07:17

That was literally fulfilled as people came in and even stole the gold that coated the temple after it was burnt and destroyed.

    07:20-07:23

So they're heading east back towards Bethany.

    07:23-07:24

    Remember, Passion Week?

    07:25-07:31

Jesus and the disciples stayed in Bethany and then went down into Jerusalem during the day.

    07:33-07:47

It says, "And as He sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked Him privately, 'Tell us, when will these things be?

    07:47-08:01

And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?' Peter, James, John, and Andrew are understandably confused.

    08:03-08:05

    How's this stuff going down?

    08:06-08:13

You know, the Old Testament says that the Messiah was going to come, and the Messiah was going to suffer, and the Messiah was going to reign.

    08:14-08:16

    That's throughout the Old Testament.

    08:17-08:20

But there's a chunk of time that the Old Testament never talks about.

    08:20-08:22

Do you know what chunk of time that is?

    08:23-08:24

It's the time that you're sitting in right now.

    08:26-08:30

You see, if you just read the Old Testament, the Messiah comes, the Messiah suffers, the Messiah reigns over all the earth.

    08:30-08:35

The Messiah comes, the Messiah suffers, the Messiah has a kingdom all over the earth.

    08:36-08:39

What happens in between His suffering and His reigning?

    08:41-08:47

I mean, the disciples knew that Jesus was the Messiah, so the question is, when are you going to establish your kingdom?

    08:49-08:55

Jesus already told them that He was going to be crucified, Now he's telling them that the temple is about to be completely destroyed.

    08:55-08:58

None of it makes sense to the disciples.

    09:00-09:09

Like, wait a minute, you're the Christ, so you're going to be killed and God's building is going to be destroyed?

    09:10-09:12

This just doesn't make any sense.

    09:14-09:20

But Jesus sits down and tells them how the rest of history is going to play out.

    09:21-09:32

As we look at verses 1-13, this is very important for us because we live in the time that He's describing in verses 1-13.

    09:34-09:36

I want you to listen very carefully.

    09:39-09:46

These verses that we're about to look at - before 70 A.D.

    09:48-09:51

Like, well, Jesus was talking about the destruction of the temple.

    09:52-09:57

So all of these things that He's saying in these verses all happened before 70 A.D.

    09:58-10:00

And I don't believe that at all.

    10:01-10:02

I'm going to tell you why in a second.

    10:02-10:08

But some people want to put these verses - verses 1-13 - some people want to put them with the tribulation.

    10:08-10:16

Meaning, oh, He's talking about the last seven years - It's a book of revelation type stuff.

    10:16-10:20

That's what he's talking about and I don't believe that either.

    10:23-10:29

I believe that verses 1-13, Jesus is talking about the time that you're sitting in right now.

    10:30-10:33

You're like, well, can you give me three good reasons why you believe that?

    10:33-10:33

    Absolutely.

    10:36-10:37

    Here's three reasons.

    10:37-10:40

Number one, the other Gospel accounts.

    10:41-10:53

When you harmonize the Gospels, When you look at Matthew's account and Luke's account, and you put them all together, understand that each of these Gospel writers were giving their perspective of a story.

    10:53-10:57

So if you want the full story, it helps to harmonize the accounts.

    10:59-11:06

And in Matthew's account, the disciples asked Jesus for the signs accompanying His return and the close of the age.

    11:07-11:08

    Ok?

    11:08-11:10

    So they were very specific.

    11:10-11:12

We want to know what's going to happen before you return.

    11:14-11:20

So I don't believe that Jesus was just talking about something that was going to happen over the next couple of decades here.

    11:23-11:37

The second reason is the end can't just be talking about the temple because we're going to see here in a second with these verses that Jesus is talking about things on a global, not on a local scale.

    11:38-11:38

    Ok?

    11:40-11:48

The third reason I believe that verses 1-13 describes the day that we live in now is just simply this.

    11:50-11:55

You're going to see as we walk through these verses that Jesus describes the last 2,000 years.

    11:56-12:09

In verse 7, Jesus said, "This must take place, but the end is not yet." Meaning, the end of the world isn't going to happen all at once.

    12:10-12:24

If you study your Old Testament, you see a lot of times when there's prophecy, the prophet would give a prophecy that dealt with the immediate context of what was happening, but also give a prophecy with what was going to come at the end.

    12:24-12:27

And I believe that that's exactly what Jesus is doing here.

    12:28-12:33

He talks about the destruction of the temple as an immediate thing that's happening.

    12:34-12:39

And from there, like the Old Testament prophets, He launches into talking about the future.

    12:41-12:42

    All through the Old Testament.

    12:45-13:09

So I believe that the period that Jesus is talking about, and I understand that while you're doing what you do throughout the week, what I'm doing is studying this passage and studying and studying and reading and cross-referencing and studying, I'm thoroughly convinced that in these verses Jesus is talking about the time that we live in right now.

    13:12-13:14

So if you're not there yet, just hang on.

    13:16-13:20

We have a graphic, sort of a timeline.

    13:23-13:29

And Darren actually made this one because I was looking them up online and I wanted something very simple and they were kind of a mess.

    13:29-13:35

But if you just look at this timeline, if you look at history, so like creation's back here, right?

    13:36-13:42

Old Testament era leading up to the incarnation, the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    13:43-13:49

Then after Christ ascended, there's the church age.

    13:49-13:50

This is the big black box.

    13:50-13:54

Like I said earlier, that's not foreseen in the Old Testament.

    13:56-14:01

And after the church age, The Bible says there's going to be a seven year period of tribulation.

    14:02-14:04

    Or Daniel's 70th week.

    14:04-14:08

There's going to be a period of seven years of hell on earth.

    14:09-14:20

And then after those seven years, Jesus Christ returns and He establishes a literal thousand year reign on the earth.

    14:20-14:29

And I believe that it's a literal thousand years because in Revelation 20, six times, It says a thousand years.

    14:29-14:30

    Six times.

    14:31-14:31

    A thousand years.

    14:31-14:32

    A thousand years.

    14:32-14:33

    A thousand years.

    14:33-14:35

It's not spoken of as metaphorical.

    14:35-14:37

It's spoken of as being very literal.

    14:39-14:43

I believe that the rapture actually happens before the tribulation.

    14:43-14:47

And that was actually one of the questions that came in for Questions & Answers Sunday.

    14:48-14:52

So, I'm going to be addressing that on Q&A day.

    14:52-14:55

I believe the rapture happens before the tribulation.

    14:56-15:02

What I want you to see with this chart is this section that we're going to look at today.

    15:04-15:07

Jesus talked about the destruction of the temple which was 70 A.D.

    15:08-15:12

And then from there, launches into talking about what we call the church age.

    15:13-15:15

This is the period of time that He's dealing with here.

    15:17-15:26

In other words, verses 1-13, Jesus describes the time between His first coming and the tribulation in general terms.

    15:27-15:37

In verses 14-27 that we'll talk about next week, Jesus describes the future seven-year tribulation and His Second Coming, and He uses specific terms for that.

    15:40-15:56

And then verses 28-37, Jesus gives the application of this sermon when He says, I believe it's four times in that passage, "Stay awake." "Stay awake." That's where we're heading the next three weeks.

    15:58-15:58

    Okay?

    15:58-16:05

So if you're taking notes, first of all, spoiler alert, three ways Jesus describes the world until he returns.

    16:05-16:08

Number one, there will be great deception.

    16:10-16:11

    There will be great deception.

    16:12-16:14

Look at verses five through six.

    16:14-16:19

The disciples ask the question, when are these things about to be accomplished?

    16:19-16:22

What are the, Matthew, what are the signs of the end of the age?

    16:23-16:26

What's going to happen before you return, Jesus?

    16:29-16:35

"Jesus began to say to them, 'See that no one leads you astray.

    16:37-16:47

Many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He!' And they will lead many astray.'" First of all, there will be great deception.

    16:48-17:00

Twice Jesus warns that there are going to be people coming saying that they are Jesus, saying that they're God in the flesh, saying that they are some kind of deity incarnate, and they're going to lead people astray.

    17:01-17:15

And you're like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, who would fall for that?" The answer is many people all over the world right this minute.

    17:16-17:30

See, this is one reason people are like, "Yeah, this is the future." You're like, "This is happening now, man. This is happening now." All this false Christs and people saying they're Jesus, wow, that's going to be really something someday when that happens, right?

    17:31-17:32

    That's happening right now.

    17:36-17:40

You're like, "Can you give me an example?" I'm going to give you a few. This is just a few, ok?

    17:40-17:45

Because I could keep you here until next Thanksgiving, giving you examples of this stuff.

    17:47-17:49

Let me start off with one of my favorites here.

    17:50-17:52

How many people have heard of Silvio Gissel?

    17:54-17:56

A couple of you have heard of Silvio Gissel?

    17:57-17:58

I've never heard of this guy.

    17:59-18:07

Where my wife works - today's her birthday by the way - but where my wife works, she has this customer that he always talks about - Silvio Gissel.

    18:09-18:10

    Who is this guy?

    18:10-18:13

Well, he was born in 1862 and he died in 1930.

    18:14-18:15

And you can look him up.

    18:15-18:16

    He was a German merchant.

    18:17-18:21

He was a theoretical economist, and interestingly enough, he was an anarchist.

    18:24-18:28

But there are many people that believe that he was the return of Jesus Christ.

    18:31-18:33

You said his name was Silvio.

    18:33-18:37

Yeah, well, Jesus took up a new name when he came back.

    18:40-18:48

I guess, you know, the name that he'd been using, you know, let's freshen things up a bit I guess.

    18:49-18:51

The Silvio Gissel was the return of Jesus.

    18:51-18:52

    Look him up.

    18:52-18:54

There are people that still believe that.

    18:56-18:59

How many people have heard of Jose Luis de Jesus?

    19:00-19:01

How many people have heard of this guy?

    19:02-19:03

    I see Taylor smiling.

    19:03-19:04

    You've heard of this guy.

    19:04-19:07

I actually years ago saw a documentary about this guy.

    19:07-19:08

Have you heard of this guy?

    19:09-19:11

    He actually died last year.

    19:11-19:11

    Did you know that?

    19:12-19:13

    His church denies it.

    19:14-19:31

Like he, seriously, like he died August 8th of last year in his 60's and his church says "Oh no, no, no, no, he is alive and well." His life was just a reckless, immoral mess.

    19:32-19:38

Listen, I'm going to tell you something, and I don't want you to ask me to explain it, because I can't.

    19:39-19:48

He claimed to be both the return of Jesus and the Antichrist both.

    19:50-19:52

And you're like, well, how does that work?

    19:53-19:54

    I don't know.

    19:57-20:06

He had this thing about and then there was like the Pauline teaching and the Pauline teaching.

    20:06-20:08

    It's just, it's wacky.

    20:08-20:16

And I read this and I don't think I'm a complete idiot, but I was reading this stuff and I'm like, I can't follow his logic.

    20:18-20:19

    Because he's crazy.

    20:21-20:24

He claimed to be both the return of Jesus and the Antichrist.

    20:25-20:27

And you remember what he was famous for, right?

    20:27-20:28

All of his followers got what?

    20:29-20:30

    Did you hear this?

    20:30-20:35

666 tattooed on themselves, because he's Jesus and the Antichrist.

    20:35-20:45

And I think it was January of 2013, a video went viral, I think that's what it was, of a parent holding their three-year-old down to get a 666 tattoo on the three-year-old.

    20:47-20:51

But they believe that that was their sign of identifying with this Christ.

    20:55-20:56

    This guy has countless followers.

    20:56-21:01

His church has purchased houses and land and stuff for him all over the place.

    21:02-21:06

    Huge following in his circles.

    21:07-21:08

Jose Luis De Jesus, look him up.

    21:09-21:12

I read this article, this was just last month.

    21:12-21:14

    Came out September 18th, 2014.

    21:15-21:17

There's false Christs all over the world.

    21:18-21:19

    People are following them.

    21:20-21:23

    A.J. Miller in Australia.

    21:24-21:26

    Write this down, no relation.

    21:29-21:42

AJ Miller and his partner, Mary Luck, he is in Australia and he preaches that he is the reincarnation of Jesus Christ and she is the reincarnation of Mary Magdalene.

    21:44-21:56

That yeah, when they were Jesus and Mary, they had kids together and all this stuff and now Jesus and Mary Magdalene are reincarnated and people are buying this.

    21:58-22:04

If you heard of Sergei Anatolyevich Turok, if you heard of this guy, he's in Siberia.

    22:05-22:08

He also teaches that he is Jesus reincarnated.

    22:12-22:15

    About Alvaro Thies in Brazil.

    22:17-22:21

Yet another person that teaches that he is Jesus reincarnated.

    22:22-22:24

And there's all these people following him.

    22:25-22:30

I was reading this and I was thinking to myself, I would love to get these three guys in the same room.

    22:31-22:32

    Wouldn't that be interesting?

    22:35-22:37

Reincarnation of Jesus I would like you to meet.

    22:39-22:40

    Reincarnation of Jesus.

    22:41-22:44

Hold on a second, reincarnation of Jesus is gonna be here any moment.

    22:45-22:46

I just love to see that conversation.

    22:48-22:49

    False Christs.

    22:51-22:51

    Those are just a few.

    22:53-22:54

    Those are just a few.

    22:54-22:55

    Who falls for this?

    22:57-22:57

    Here's who falls for this.

    22:57-22:59

People who don't know their Bibles.

    22:59-23:00

    That's who falls for it.

    23:01-23:05

That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel, that's why we walk in the Word.

    23:06-23:15

That's why we go through the Bible verse by verse trying to understand here's what God says, here's what it means, here's how I apply this.

    23:15-23:17

This is why we walk through the Word of God together.

    23:20-23:31

Because Jesus said there are going to be people And there are people that stand up and say, "Hey, I'm Jesus." They have people throwing millions of dollars at them.

    23:31-23:33

    And thousands of followers.

    23:33-23:35

And living on their own compounds.

    23:39-23:42

Exactly like Jesus said it was going to happen, there's going to be false Christs.

    23:43-23:48

Many will come in My name saying, "I am He." Many people are being led astray.

    23:49-23:51

So there will be great deception.

    23:51-23:54

Secondly, Jesus says there will be global devastation.

    23:55-23:56

    There will be global devastation.

    23:56-23:57

Look at verses 7 and 8.

    23:59-24:03

It says, "And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed.

    24:04-24:07

This must take place, but the end is not yet.

    24:07-24:11

For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.

    24:11-24:13

There will be earthquakes in various places.

    24:14-24:15

    There will be famines.

    24:16-24:19

These are but the beginning of birth pains.

    24:22-24:29

So for the post-millennialist that believes that the church is going to usher in utopia, and then Jesus returns.

    24:31-24:42

For the evolutionist that says that things are getting better and better and better and better, that's not what Jesus said, and that's not what history has shown, has it?

    24:45-24:46

But we see instead that things are getting worse.

    24:48-24:48

    Things are getting worse.

    24:49-25:01

First of all, Jesus said, "Proceeding His return is going to be a period of time where there are wars." Wow.

    25:02-25:03

You can look this stuff up.

    25:03-25:05

I'm not going to read the whole list to you.

    25:05-25:05

    You can look it up.

    25:06-25:10

Just do a search on world wars, or wars all over the world.

    25:10-25:13

    Just Google wars throughout history.

    25:16-25:20

184-280 was the Three Kingdoms War.

    25:21-25:23

    Killed 36-40 million people.

    25:25-25:31

755-763, the An Lushan Rebellion killed 13 million people.

    25:32-25:38

The Mongol conquests, 1206-1324, killed 40-70 million people.

    25:40-25:46

1562-1598, the French Wars of Religion killed somewhere between 2 and 4 million people.

    25:47-25:55

1616-1662, the Qing Dynasty conquered the Ming Dynasty, killing 25 million people.

    25:57-26:05

The Napoleonic Wars in 1803-1815 killed somewhere between 3.5 to 6 million people.

    26:07-26:12

1850 to 1864, the Taiping Rebellion killed 20 million people.

    26:13-26:19

1914 to 1918, World War I killed 17 million people.

    26:21-26:25

1939 to 1945, World War II, do you know how many people died in World War II?

    26:28-26:33

Somewhere between 60 and 85 million people.

    26:35-26:36

There's a war going on right now.

    26:36-26:37

    The war on terror.

    26:38-26:39

    2001 to present.

    26:41-26:46

Some people estimate that already upwards of 1.2 million people have died in the war on terror.

    26:47-26:48

Now listen, these are just some.

    26:48-26:52

I had an entire page of lists.

    26:52-26:54

I was trying to sort them by century.

    26:55-26:57

And there was just so much.

    26:58-27:06

What I see every century in history has been marked by millions upon millions of people being killed in war.

    27:07-27:13

So when Jesus says there's going to be wars and rumors of wars, I'm like, why does that have to be future?

    27:13-27:15

I see that happening right now.

    27:18-27:19

He said there's going to be wars.

    27:21-27:22

Notice next he talks about earthquakes.

    27:25-27:25

    Earthquakes.

    27:27-27:29

You know how many earthquakes there are a year?

    27:31-27:32

    Take a guess.

    27:32-27:34

How many earthquakes do you think there are every year?

    27:36-27:39

Bit of a trick question, because they don't really know.

    27:39-27:40

Do you know what they estimate?

    27:42-27:43

You think it's in the thousands?

    27:44-27:45

You think it's in the tens of thousands?

    27:50-27:50

    What do you think?

    27:51-27:52

How many earthquakes do you think there are every year?

    27:54-27:54

    The millions.

    27:56-28:00

They estimate that there are in the millions every year.

    28:00-28:09

You're like, "Well, why don't we hear about it?" Because most of them are small and most of them are in remote areas where they're not being tracked.

    28:11-28:12

    I kind of chuckled.

    28:13-28:22

It says, "Here's how many earthquakes we catch and measure every year." I'm like, "You catch?" I just wondered what that looked like when you catch an earthquake.

    28:24-28:26

But do you know how many earthquakes they catch and measure?

    28:27-28:30

    About 20,000 a year.

    28:31-28:33

Of course, we usually hear about the big ones, don't we?

    28:33-28:42

The earthquake in Haiti in 2010 killed somewhere between 100,000 and 160,000 people.

    28:43-28:50

Remember the tsunami in Thailand in 2004 killed a quarter of a million people in one day.

    28:52-28:59

So Jesus said there's going to be natural disasters, earthquakes in various places.

    28:59-29:00

He says there will be famines.

    29:02-29:02

    There will be famines.

    29:03-29:14

Actually, in Luke's account, in Luke 21, Jesus added the word "pestilences." There will be famines and pestilences.

    29:17-29:26

Every time a natural disaster hits, you get people like Pat Robertson speaking up and saying, "that's the judgment of God on homosexuality." There it is.

    29:28-29:29

And I don't think that it is.

    29:31-29:38

I think it's just a manifestation of exactly what Jesus described was going to happen in these days that we live in.

    29:41-29:49

Famines and pestilences like the wars countless throughout the centuries.

    29:50-29:53

541 - the Justinian plague in Constantinople.

    29:54-30:00

some rats got on an Egyptian grain boat and killed 25 million people.

    30:00-30:06

40% of the population of Constantinople wiped out by one plague.

    30:09-30:10

    1347 to 1351.

    30:11-30:13

How many people have heard of the Black Death?

    30:14-30:15

    Heard of the Black Death?

    30:17-30:27

The Black Death killed 75 - somewhere between 75 and 200 million people of Europe. The death toll was unbelievable.

    30:29-30:59

Historians estimate that it killed about 60% of the population of Europe at the time. Think about that. 60% of the population wiped out by one plague. 1918, the Spanish flu killed 50 million people. It was a worldwide epidemic. I could go on and on. We could talk about fever, polio, the Asian flu, botulism, whooping cough, mumps.

    31:01-31:04

You know, we live in a day of such advanced medicine, don't we?

    31:05-31:09

The medical procedures we can do today are just absolutely incredible.

    31:09-31:16

Doesn't it seem like every year there's a new disease that's like the thing to be scared to death of?

    31:16-31:17

You know what I'm talking about?

    31:18-31:22

You know, remember in the 80's it was AIDS.

    31:23-31:25

    and it's still an issue.

    31:26-31:35

But just think back to the last few years, SARS, the West Nile virus, the bird flu, the swine flu, H1N1, what's the newest one?

    31:36-31:36

    Ebola, right?

    31:39-31:45

Write this down, next year, people are going to forget about Ebola and there's going to be something else.

    31:46-31:47

There's gonna be a new one.

    31:48-31:58

People are gonna be like, "You remember Ebola?" I'm just like, "Oh yeah, didn't that affect a couple people in our country, it's going to be like famines and pestilences.

    32:01-32:08

Notice Jesus said, "These are but the beginning of birth pains." What does that mean?

    32:10-32:14

I have not yet had the pleasure of experiencing birth pains.

    32:15-32:17

It is not on my bucket list.

    32:18-32:22

So this is one of those things to wean from other people.

    32:24-32:31

And they say with birth pains, "Moms, can you testify to this?

    32:31-32:40

The closer you get to delivery, the more frequent and the more intense the pains are, right?" Is that how it goes?

    32:41-32:42

    I see some heads nodding.

    32:42-32:42

    Is that how it goes?

    32:43-32:48

All right, like I said, I can't really speak from experience here or share a funny story about this at all.

    32:49-32:50

This is just what I'm told.

    32:50-32:57

The closer you get to the time, the more frequent and the more intense the pains are.

    32:58-33:02

Now listen, Jesus said this is what's going to happen on a global scale.

    33:02-33:11

The closer we get to His return, the more frequent and the more intense these pains are going to be.

    33:11-33:12

    You're like, what pains?

    33:12-33:16

Wars, earthquakes, and famines and pestilences.

    33:17-33:19

It's not going to get better.

    33:19-33:20

    It's not.

    33:22-33:23

There's not going to be peace on earth.

    33:24-33:26

They're not going to eradicate disease.

    33:27-33:28

    It's not going to happen.

    33:29-33:32

What is going to happen is it's going to get worse, and it's going to get worse.

    33:33-33:35

And it's going to happen more and it's going to happen more.

    33:36-33:41

And it's all building up to the big day.

    33:45-33:46

    There will be global devastation.

    33:51-34:01

Again, as I was studying this this week, I thought I just can't see this passage taking place during the seven year tribulation because I'm seeing these things happen right now.

    34:02-34:07

Like I said, here's a partial list of the things Jesus is describing.

    34:09-34:10

Finally, there will be gospel division.

    34:12-34:13

    There will be gospel division.

    34:15-34:16

    There will be great deception.

    34:16-34:17

    There will be global devastation.

    34:17-34:19

But there will be gospel division.

    34:21-34:22

Jesus said, "But be on your guard.

    34:25-34:26

For they will deliver you over to councils.

    34:28-34:30

And you will be beaten in synagogues.

    34:30-34:35

And you will stand before governors and kings for My sake to bear witness before them.

    34:35-34:38

And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

    34:39-34:42

And when they bring you to trial deliver you over?

    34:45-34:54

Do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.

    34:55-35:03

And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father, his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death.

    35:05-35:07

And you will be hated by all for my name's sake.

    35:08-35:10

The one who endures to the end will be saved.

    35:13-35:14

    Gospel division.

    35:14-35:15

So there will be people led astray.

    35:16-35:16

    There's going to be wars.

    35:17-35:18

There's going to be natural disasters.

    35:18-35:31

And in the midst of all of this, the people who identify with Jesus Christ are going to be sharing His love and His Word in a hostile world.

    35:33-35:35

A couple things I want to point out as we're about to wrap up.

    35:36-35:44

In verse 9, Jesus talked about being delivered over to councils, being beaten in synagogues.

    35:45-35:48

The Jews held their court in the synagogues.

    35:48-35:50

    That's where trials happened.

    35:54-36:00

You notice, Tom, more and more and more Christianity is on trial.

    36:03-36:05

And I don't mean that metaphorically.

    36:06-36:11

issues of morality, issues of God's Word are being argued in our courts.

    36:13-36:17

Have you ever been taken to court because of what you believe about Jesus Christ?

    36:19-36:19

    My wife and I have.

    36:20-36:22

I'll tell you that story sometime, not today.

    36:23-36:27

We were taken to court because of what we believe.

    36:29-36:37

But you know, it's sad, but you kind of expect it a hostile, sinful world, right?

    36:38-36:39

Look at what Jesus says in verse 12.

    36:39-36:40

    Look at that again.

    36:41-36:55

"Brother will deliver brother over to death, father against children, children against parents, having them put to death." It's bad enough when it's people you don't know or it's enemies of the Gospel.

    36:57-37:04

But when those enemies are revealed to be people closest to you...

    37:04-37:41

happening right now. This stuff is happening right now. When I was in Chicago we had a baptism service at one of the Harvest Bible chapels in the Niles campus and there was a girl from a Muslim family that stepped up to get baptized and she said if my family finds out, if my uncles find out that I got baptized today, they will kill me." Now young people, she didn't mean if my parents found out that I lost my cell phone they're going to kill me like we say.

    37:41-37:42

She didn't mean it like that.

    37:44-37:52

Because I asked her, I said, "Is your life in danger?" She was trembling.

    37:53-37:56

Her hands were shaking and I could see the tears welling up in her eyes.

    37:57-38:03

"My family will kill me if they find out that I've been baptized in Jesus.

    38:05-38:18

They will kill me." So the stuff that Jesus is talking about, "Yet future, yes, but is it happening right now?" It certainly is.

    38:20-38:26

But the point that here's a teenage girl, scared of her own family.

    38:28-38:28

    Why?

    38:31-38:32

    Because she loves Jesus.

    38:34-38:35

    Those days are here.

    38:36-38:37

    Those days are here!

    38:40-38:43

But as I close, I do got to tell you this.

    38:45-38:46

It's not all doom and gloom.

    38:48-39:02

If I just said, "Let's sing the last song and go." We could walk out of here like, "Church was a bummer." I want you to look again, because this is not all doom and gloom.

    39:04-39:06

Because there are three glorious realities.

    39:06-39:07

I want you to write these down.

    39:08-39:17

Yes, there's going to be apostasy and global devastation and people killing their own family members because of Jesus.

    39:18-39:19

    Three glorious realities.

    39:21-39:23

And I'll tell you, this is the stuff that keeps me going.

    39:25-39:29

Number one, the gospel is proclaimed.

    39:31-39:32

Did you see that in verse 10?

    39:33-39:36

Jesus said the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations.

    39:39-39:40

    Isn't that awesome?

    39:43-39:45

Because what happens when the gospel is proclaimed?

    39:46-39:47

What happens when the gospel is proclaimed?

    39:48-40:46

happens. People come alive, amen. Lives are changed, marriages are healed, relationships are healed, the Holy Spirit comes in and dwells someone and changes someone from the inside out, manifesting God's love through them. That's what happens when the gospel is proclaimed. So in the midst of this world crumbling apart around us, God's glorious gospel is going forward and it's going forward you. In the Pittsburgh area, in Zambia, or Kentucky, or wherever you are, the God of the Gospel is going forth through you. And that is a glorious thing. That is a glorious thing. The Gospel is proclaimed. The second glorious reality is this, the Holy Spirit reigns. Did you see that in verse 11? Like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, I don't know what I should What do I do if I get arrested?

    40:48-40:50

Jesus said don't be anxious about it.

    40:51-40:53

He says the Holy Spirit is going to speak through you.

    40:55-40:59

God at work gloriously in the face of hostility.

    41:00-41:04

As I said, I was on trial because of my beliefs.

    41:07-41:18

But you know another way of looking at that is I had an opportunity to share what I believe about the Gospel of Jesus Christ The Holy Spirit reigns.

    41:19-41:22

The Gospel is proclaimed and the Holy Spirit reigns.

    41:22-41:23

    We're not on our own.

    41:24-41:26

God didn't leave us to say, you know, figure it out.

    41:27-41:28

    Figure it out.

    41:28-41:30

I took care of your salvation.

    41:30-41:31

    Now figure the rest out.

    41:32-41:36

His Holy Spirit is alive and reigning through you.

    41:37-41:38

There's nothing to be afraid of.

    41:40-41:47

And finally, There's deception, there's devastation, there's gospel division, but do you know what else there is?

    41:49-41:50

    There's a finish line.

    41:52-41:53

    There's a finish line.

    41:54-41:56

Look at the last statement that Jesus makes.

    41:57-42:04

"But the one who endures to the end will be saved." That's good news.

    42:04-42:06

    Why is that good news?

    42:07-42:09

Because it's not going to be like this forever.

    42:10-42:19

You see this little list and this history and all these wars and false Christs and pestilences that I kind of researched and wrote down.

    42:21-42:24

If I preached this sermon next year, I'd have to update.

    42:24-42:26

Here's the ones that have been added since.

    42:26-42:30

And someday, all this stuff is just simply going to be history.

    42:30-42:31

    It's like done.

    42:32-42:32

    Done.

    42:34-42:35

    Because there's a finish line.

    42:35-42:37

It's not going to be like this forever.

    42:38-42:40

There's going to come a day Wars - done.

    42:41-42:43

    Disease and death - done.

    42:43-42:44

    Earthquakes - done.

    42:46-42:49

People that hate God - done.

    42:51-42:52

    There is a finish line.

    42:53-42:56

That's why Jesus said the one who endures to the end will be saved.

    42:58-43:01

The faith that God gives you is an enduring faith.

    43:03-43:04

    Ok?

    43:05-43:07

And that's how we know who is real from who is fake.

    43:08-43:10

Because the fakers, when the going gets tough, they're done.

    43:10-43:11

    They bail.

    43:12-43:17

But the true born-again people will endure to the end.

    43:17-43:20

And I'd like to encourage you church, there is a finish line.

    43:21-43:23

It is not going to be like this forever.

    43:25-43:26

    It is not.

    43:28-43:40

Next week, we're going to pick up in v. 14 because Jesus is going to shift from some general things about life during what we call the church age.

    43:41-43:51

And then he focuses to specific things about the seven-year tribulation that leads up to His glorious return.

    43:53-43:54

    Let's pray.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 13:1-13

  1. Have you ever been hated by someone because of Jesus? Share with the group how it made you feel and how you handled it.

  2. List the things that Jesus describes in this passage. Does this change your expectations about the world? Why or why not?

  3. "But the one who endures to the end will be saved." (Mk 13:13). What did Jesus mean by this statement? Do you lose your salvation by running out of endurance? Does this mean only saved people have endurance? Explain what this statement means - and what endurance looks like.

Alright, open your Bibles to the Gospel according to Mark.

    00:06-00:08

    We're in chapter 12.

    00:10-00:14

Are you with us so far in where we're at in the Gospel of Mark?

    00:14-00:17

This year we're talking really just about three things.

    00:18-00:26

As Mark takes us to the last week of Jesus' life, he highlights there's three things about Jesus that you need to know.

    00:26-00:28

You need to know these three things.

    00:29-00:31

First of all, He is the Lord.

    00:31-00:32

    He has all authority.

    00:35-00:37

He should have authority over us.

    00:37-00:38

    He is the Lamb.

    00:39-00:41

He is the Lamb of God who came to die.

    00:42-00:43

    Take away our sins.

    00:44-00:45

And then finally, He is the life.

    00:46-00:53

He came to not just die on the cross, but to resurrect from the dead so that we can have the promise of eternal life.

    00:54-00:58

That we receive immediately upon belief of Jesus Christ.

    00:59-01:12

So we've seen in this last week Jesus making His triumphal entry, riding into Jerusalem, announcing that He is the Messiah with that prophetic act - that prophecy-fulfilling act.

    01:15-01:18

And Jesus immediately the next day cleansed the temple.

    01:20-01:23

And then we went through a series of challenges.

    01:23-01:32

People trying to discredit Jesus, asking Him all these questions and make Him look bad in front of everyone so that people would not believe in Him.

    01:33-01:35

And Jesus answered all of their questions.

    01:36-01:39

And that brings us up to verse 38.

    01:39-01:39

    Are you with me?

    01:42-01:55

It says, "And in His teaching, He said, 'Beware.'" I want to stop there.

    01:57-01:57

    Beware.

    01:59-02:00

That's the word of the day.

    02:01-02:02

The word of the day is beware.

    02:05-02:06

    Beware is a serious word.

    02:10-02:20

Back in 2010, to earn a few bucks on the side, I signed up to be a part-time census taker.

    02:20-02:21

    Remember the census?

    02:21-02:29

Those people, if you didn't send your thing in, you had these annoying people show up at your door help you fill out the form. I was one of those annoying people.

    02:30-02:31

That was me, okay? Sorry about that.

    02:36-02:37

    And I enjoyed it.

    02:38-02:39

    Sometimes.

    02:39-02:41

It was nice to get out and meet the neighbors.

    02:41-02:53

Let me tell you the times I did not enjoy. Pulling into a house and seeing a sign that said, "Beware of the dog!" Now you know me, I'm a dog person.

    02:54-02:58

I am a dog person. I love dogs.

    02:58-03:04

I'll be honest with you, seeing a sign that says "Beware of the dog" that communicates something, doesn't it?

    03:05-03:27

And one of the people that I actually trained with went to a house up the road a little ways, where the guy came out with trained dogs sitting beside him and he said, "You have about 5 seconds to get off my property before I stick my dogs on you." Beware. It's a serious word. Okay? It's a serious word.

    03:27-03:49

They don't just have a sign up that says, "Attention all visitors, we are dog lovers here too." Or, "Hi, we we own a lapso -apso." It says, "Beware of the dog," meaning, "You better watch yourself, Because my dog will attack you and hurt you.

    03:51-03:53

So beware is a serious word, ok?

    03:53-04:00

Sometimes we read through the Bible very quickly, and we can miss the impact of the actual words.

    04:00-04:03

That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel, we study the Bible verse by verse.

    04:03-04:05

All of the words are important.

    04:06-04:14

And this teaching that Jesus is about to give all hangs on an extremely important word.

    04:14-04:15

    The word is what?

    04:16-04:17

    Beware!

    04:18-04:19

    Danger ahead!

    04:20-04:22

    Watch out for yourselves!

    04:24-04:25

    Because this is serious business.

    04:27-04:27

    Beware!

    04:29-04:30

    Beware!

    04:30-04:31

It's a warning to the flock.

    04:34-04:43

Jesus, verse 38, "And in His teaching He said, 'Beware of the scribes.'" We've talked about them.

    04:43-04:45

The scribes were the experts Old Testament law.

    04:46-04:55

These were the people that knew the Old Testament frontwards, backwards, plus all of their man -made laws that they added to it.

    04:57-04:59

They were the religious experts of the day.

    05:01-05:12

But before we look at these words, I want you to write a couple of things down about why Jesus gave such a serious warning.

    05:13-05:22

us down. Number one, not everyone who says they represent God actually represents God.

    05:24-05:42

Not everyone who says they represent God actually represents God. I don't care what the title is. I don't care how many people follow that person. I don't care what kind of fancy clothes they wear. Not everyone who says they represent God actually represents God.

    05:43-06:10

We need to remind ourselves of this church because we live in a very ecumenical day. Let's accept everyone even if they teach unbiblical things, even if they practice unbiblical things. Let's just accept everyone. Several years ago at my old church, members of our church had the Jehovah's Witnesses knock on their door, and they said, "Hey, I want you to meet our pastor," and they brought these Jehovah's Witnesses to my office.

    06:13-06:14

    We had a lively conversation.

    06:17-06:32

But when we left, when they got up to leave, they were nice people, when they got up to leave the man said, "You know, we're both really after the same thing." Like, no we are not.

    06:34-06:38

I am after teaching people what the Bible says about Jesus Christ.

    06:39-06:40

    What were they after?

    06:44-06:45

    Sending people to hell, essentially.

    06:47-06:50

Denying the truth of God's word, denying the truth of his son.

    06:51-06:56

So this idea of, well, we're both going after the same thing, that's just not true.

    06:58-07:03

Like, "Well, how can you say something like that?" Well, we skipped a couple of verses in the sermons.

    07:03-07:13

I blogged this because we're not skipping anything intentionally, but I wanted to spend more time in Mark chapter 13, so make sure you get on our website.

    07:13-07:23

But there's a blog about verses 35 through 37, and it all focuses on this issue, "Who is Jesus Christ?" Jesus said it's vitally important that you understand who He is.

    07:27-07:28

And that's the problem with these cults.

    07:30-07:32

    Denying who Jesus is.

    07:34-07:56

Saying, you know, like the Mormons, "Jesus is the brother of Satan, the brother of Lucifer, they're brothers." And the Jehovah's Witnesses denying that Jesus is God in the flesh, even though the New Testament, If it says anything, it says that, that Jesus is God in the flesh, denying the most important doctrine in the New Testament.

    08:00-08:03

If you deny the person and the work of Jesus Christ, you're a missionary for hell.

    08:05-08:09

So understand that not everyone who says they represent God actually represent God.

    08:10-08:13

Jesus said the issue of who He is is vitally important.

    08:18-08:19

    Number two, write this down.

    08:20-08:24

People use religion to manipulate and victimize other people.

    08:26-08:36

Like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, that's a really weird thing to say in church on Sunday morning." People use religion to manipulate people and to victimize people.

    08:40-08:41

    That is a true statement.

    08:43-08:45

    But listen, not everybody.

    08:46-08:47

    Not everybody.

    08:49-08:49

    Jesus didn't.

    08:53-09:02

There are many people out there who would use religion to manipulate you and to victimize you.

    09:04-09:11

You're like, "Well, if not everybody's doing it, how can you tell?" How can you tell?

    09:12-09:14

Well, that takes us back to the text.

    09:16-09:28

In his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes." In other words, on your outline, "Beware of the false religious teachers." Jot these down on your outline.

    09:29-09:30

    First of all, beware.

    09:32-09:33

    They demand.

    09:34-09:35

    They demand.

    09:39-09:46

We're going to see here, Jesus said, "This is what you watch out for." They don't give.

    09:48-09:48

    They demand.

    09:50-09:51

    They're not humble.

    09:52-09:54

    They are self-exalting.

    09:56-09:58

Look at what Jesus said first of all.

    09:58-10:07

He says, "Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes." What's up with the robes?

    10:09-10:19

In Numbers 15, when God was giving the law, He told Israel to attach a blue cord to the tassels of your garment.

    10:21-10:26

And when you look at that blue cord, it was to remind you to be obedient to the Lord.

    10:28-10:30

It was like God's fashion accessory.

    10:31-10:38

So just put this blue cord on and every time you see it, it's a reminder that I should to be obedient to the commandments of the Lord.

    10:39-10:41

Well, over time, that got a little corrupted.

    10:42-10:47

It became about the fashion accessory, not about what God said it meant.

    10:48-10:51

    And the cords got bigger.

    10:51-10:52

    And the tassels got bigger.

    10:53-10:58

And the robes got bigger to the point in Jesus' day that that was sort of a status symbol.

    10:59-11:06

If you had the biggest, most elaborate, long robe, that was just your way when you walked down the street, Everybody's like, "Wow!

    11:08-11:13

That guy loves God, because look at the size of his robe.

    11:14-11:14

    Wow!

    11:15-11:17

    Did you see his robe?

    11:17-11:21

It's got all kinds of sequins and bling and feathers on it.

    11:21-11:24

It looks like Ric Flair walking down the street.

    11:25-11:26

    Wow!

    11:28-11:35

Putting on a show with the clothes." I've got to tell you this story.

    11:35-11:39

I laughed, not at the time, but many times afterwards.

    11:39-11:42

We have this Thanksgiving service coming up, right?

    11:42-11:49

And we had a meeting, several pastors that are involved in this community service, we had a meeting to plan the service.

    11:50-11:53

The one pastor was talking about his congregation, got him a new robe.

    11:54-11:59

He was going on and on about his, now listen, I'm not saying everybody that wears a robe is like of the devil, okay?

    12:00-12:05

But I couldn't help connect the dots when Jesus was talking about the robe here.

    12:05-12:07

Anyways, he was talking about his robe.

    12:07-12:16

Well, later on in the conversation, all these other pastors started talking about me like I wasn't in the room, because I'm speaking at this service.

    12:17-12:32

And the one pastor says, "Does Jeff wear a robe?" The other one says, "No, he doesn't wear a robe." And I'm like, "I'm right here." They kept going.

    12:33-12:40

They said, "Does he have a robe?" No, he doesn't have a robe.

    12:41-12:42

    I kid you not.

    12:43-12:56

And one of the pastors said to the pastor that was talking about his new robe, they said, "Can Jeff wear your old robe?" I'm like, "Still here." And he said, "No, I'm much taller than him.

    12:56-13:05

"It would never fit him." I'm like, "I am not wearing a robe." I don't even have a bathrobe, okay?

    13:05-13:10

I'm not wearing some kind of hand -me-down robe.

    13:11-13:13

I'm not throwing anybody under the bus.

    13:14-13:21

I'm just saying, watch out for the people that place the emphasis on the outward stuff, okay?

    13:22-13:25

I'm not questioning any pastor's sincerity.

    13:26-13:27

So I'm not doing any of that.

    13:27-13:29

I'm just saying, watch out for the guy.

    13:31-13:32

    It's all about the outward.

    13:33-13:35

Because that's what Jesus was talking about here.

    13:36-13:38

They walk around in long robes.

    13:40-13:55

Secondly, He says, "And like greetings in the marketplaces." Matthew chapter 23 really gives the full transcript of Jesus' teaching on this matter.

    13:56-13:57

I'd encourage you to read that.

    13:59-14:01

What Jesus is talking about here.

    14:01-14:05

Watch out for the people that expect reverent greetings from everyone.

    14:07-14:17

You know, these scribes in Jesus' day, you couldn't just if the guy's name was Joe, you couldn't just walk up and say, "Hey, Joe." You had to greet him with a reverent greeting.

    14:18-14:24

Like, "Oh, great one." "Oh, most holy one." That's how you had to greet them.

    14:25-14:26

And Jesus said they love that stuff.

    14:26-14:27

    They eat that up.

    14:27-14:29

They're walking down, they've got their robes on.

    14:31-14:50

People are like, "Oh most holy, great, reverent one." And they're just like, "I know they're talking about me." Jesus said, "Watch out for the people that insist on the titles." Jesus talks about this in Matthew.

    14:51-15:14

Watch out for the people that are like, "Call me teacher." Or, "Call me father." Now you will refer to me as, "Father Jeff." Jesus said, "Watch out for the people that do that." And you're like, "Well, what should I call you?" You can call me Jeff.

    15:16-15:18

And your kids can call me Pastor Jeff.

    15:19-15:26

Not because I'm looking for some power trip from your children, but because I think parents should teach their children respect for all adults.

    15:27-15:28

    Ok?

    15:29-15:41

And then look, verse 39, "And have the best seats in the synagogue, and the places of honor at feasts." In the synagogue there is a platform where the leaders sat.

    15:42-15:45

And my title earns me honor.

    15:47-15:53

Watch out for the people that don't lead with humility, but lead with expectation.

    15:54-15:55

    They demand. They demand.

    15:55-15:56

    They demand.

    15:57-15:59

    Insisting on everyone revering.

    16:01-16:04

Making you feel down here while I'm up here.

    16:04-16:05

    Watch out for those people.

    16:06-16:07

    Jesus said beware.

    16:12-16:19

Church, when the religious guy thinks that he's above others, always going to be trouble 100% of the time.

    16:20-16:36

2014 has seen many famous preachers and teachers make a shipwreck of the faith because they thought their position gave them a buy on adultery and on abusing women.

    16:38-16:51

And I'm not going to get into the names, many of you people know, but many famous nationally known preachers Have destroyed their ministry and their testimony.

    16:54-17:01

Because you get to the place where you think, "I'm just a little bit above average, Joe.

    17:03-17:04

    I'm working for God.

    17:05-17:11

The normal rules of conduct don't apply to me like they apply to other people.

    17:11-17:16

And yeah, I have to preach this stuff because these people don't get it like I get it.

    17:18-17:19

It's been a bad year for that.

    17:20-17:29

And I would challenge you, or caution you rather, don't idealize or idolize any preacher or teacher.

    17:30-17:33

Only Jesus Christ is worthy of such reverence.

    17:35-17:37

Only Jesus Christ is worthy of such reverence.

    17:41-18:05

It's just a running gag in our house because every time I do a funeral and the newspaper calls, "How do you want your name printed in the paper?" I say, "You just put Jeff Miller, Pastor of or Pastor Jeff." And I tell them, "No, not Aaron, every time, do not put Reverend, please." "Well, why don't you want Reverend?" "Because I believe that only Jesus Christ is to be revered.

    18:05-18:13

I do not like to be called Reverend." And without fail, it's in the paper, the Reverend Jeffrey Miller officiating.

    18:13-18:14

    I'm like, oh come on.

    18:15-18:16

I am so not worthy of that title.

    18:17-18:18

    No one is.

    18:19-18:21

Jesus Christ alone is to be revered.

    18:24-18:26

So Jesus says first of all, beware they demand.

    18:26-18:27

    Watch out for that guy.

    18:27-18:29

Watch out for that guy that demands.

    18:30-18:31

    Demands.

    18:31-18:34

    Secondly, they destroy.

    18:36-18:45

In verse 40, Jesus said, "Who devour widows' houses." Who devour widows' houses.

    18:46-18:49

Jesus is saying this is what's going on behind the scenes.

    18:49-18:51

    This is the ultimate evil.

    18:51-18:55

They are victimizing the very people that God said to care for.

    18:56-19:04

In Jesus' day, these scribes would offer these poor widows legal help and care.

    19:06-19:07

And guess what they wanted in exchange?

    19:08-19:08

    Can anybody guess?

    19:10-19:11

    Right, Peg.

    19:11-19:12

    They want this.

    19:12-19:14

I'll take care of you, poor little widow.

    19:14-19:16

    I'll take care of you.

    19:16-19:20

I just need you to compensate me for my services.

    19:20-19:22

    I'll watch out for you.

    19:22-19:26

I just, there's just a nominal fee that goes with that.

    19:28-19:28

You know what they would do?

    19:29-19:32

Why did Jesus say they devour widows' houses?

    19:32-19:39

What they would do is these scribes would take the widow's house in pledge for their services.

    19:39-19:41

Well, I can't quite pay you what you're asking.

    19:41-19:43

Well, put your house up for pledge.

    19:44-19:45

    I'll take care of you.

    19:46-19:51

And then when the widow would die, the scribe would get the house.

    19:51-19:52

    It was all legal, right?

    19:53-19:56

Because she signed it over to them.

    19:58-19:59

    Watch out.

    20:01-20:03

Watch out for the religious people who are demanding money.

    20:05-20:08

You see these charlatans on TV.

    20:12-20:15

God wants you to plant an uncommon seed for an uncommon harvest.

    20:17-20:19

And I don't care if it is your last thousand dollars.

    20:19-20:23

You send it to me and God is going to give you a hundred thousand dollars.

    20:25-20:27

That's the modern day version of what these scribes did.

    20:28-20:30

There's nothing new under the sun.

    20:32-20:32

    Pay up.

    20:33-20:33

    Pay up.

    20:34-20:41

You know the rabbis taught in Jesus' day that with alms, with alms you purchase salvation.

    20:42-20:56

That's why in the temple, in the court of women, they had 13 receptacles, 13 little offering receptacles to make sure that these poor little widows would pay their alms, 13 of them.

    20:59-21:01

Because with alms you purchase salvation.

    21:02-21:03

Like, well, I'm glad those days are behind us.

    21:03-21:04

    Wrong.

    21:06-21:14

Do you know that one of the largest churches in the world teaches a doctrine called purgatory?

    21:14-21:15

Do you know what this doctrine teaches?

    21:17-21:23

This doctrine teaches that when you die, you still have some sin on you.

    21:25-21:37

And because God doesn't allow any sin into heaven, you go to this place called purgatory where the fire of purgatory burns the remainder of your sin off of you.

    21:40-21:53

And after spending countless years in purgatory, burning, eventually you get purified enough that you can enter into heaven.

    21:55-21:59

And do you know how you shorten someone's time in purgatory?

    21:59-22:03

Do you know how you can get somebody out of purgatory a little quicker?

    22:04-22:06

You can make the sign of the cross, that takes some time off.

    22:06-22:09

You can pray the rosary in a family setting, that takes time off.

    22:09-22:17

But one of the main ways is you pay the church to say a mass to reduce the person's time in purgatory.

    22:18-22:28

Because if you believe that, if you believe that your grandmother who just died is burning, wouldn't you give anything to reduce that time?

    22:30-22:31

    Wouldn't you?

    22:33-22:37

Anything I can do to, you know, poor grandma's burning and suffering right now.

    22:37-22:41

I better fork over some money to the church to get her out of there.

    22:41-22:42

That is a lie from hell.

    22:45-22:48

You know, the Bible says that when Jesus died on the cross, do you know the last thing he said?

    22:49-22:59

He said, "It is finished." So this idea that a believer in Jesus Christ has some sin remaining on their soul, that's a lie.

    23:01-23:07

Because Jesus thoroughly and totally, 100% cleanses us from our sin.

    23:07-23:08

The Bible says he takes it away.

    23:10-23:14

So this idea that you have sin remaining on your soul, that's a lie from hell.

    23:16-23:28

But there's a church that's making a lot of money because there are people that believe that lie because of the emotional reaction to it.

    23:28-23:42

"I don't want my loved one to suffer." Here again you have a church or a religious organization making money, teaching people you can purchase salvation.

    23:44-23:48

Jesus said, "Beware, they destroy." They destroy.

    23:48-23:52

Watch out for the religious organization that just wants your money.

    23:53-23:55

That preacher or teacher that just wants your money.

    23:56-24:00

They'll devour you to get it, and they have no time for you if you don't have it.

    24:01-24:02

    Watch out for them.

    24:04-24:06

    Beware, they destroy.

    24:06-24:07

    They destroy.

    24:09-24:13

    "Beware, they deceive." They deceive.

    24:14-24:16

Look at verse 40 again with me.

    24:18-24:28

Jesus said, "Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers." They deceive.

    24:29-24:30

Now, is there anything wrong with praying?

    24:33-24:34

    Not a trick question.

    24:34-24:35

Is there anything wrong with praying?

    24:36-24:36

    No.

    24:37-24:40

Is there anything wrong with praying publicly?

    24:41-24:41

    No.

    24:42-24:46

Is there anything wrong with having a long prayer?

    24:47-24:47

    No.

    24:48-24:49

    Like, well, what's the problem?

    24:50-24:51

The problem's in the word pretense.

    24:53-24:58

Literally, the Greek means show, for a show.

    25:00-25:02

They make everyone think they're so spiritual.

    25:03-25:06

They're theological geniuses and people eat up the show.

    25:06-25:10

He'd clean up the show, "Wow, did you hear his prayer?

    25:10-25:13

Wow, wow, wow, he can pray.

    25:13-25:14

    Wow, he can pray.

    25:15-25:24

Wow." Then word gets back to, "Oh, I just love when you pray." They're like, "Man, I'm gonna up my game.

    25:24-25:25

You thought that prayer was good?

    25:25-25:33

Wait till you hear the next prayer." Jesus said, "They're doing it for a show." Fake.

    25:35-25:36

    Please hear me.

    25:37-25:45

I believe that most people think that they are sincere when they go into ministry.

    25:48-25:56

I don't believe that there's anyone in seminary or in Bible college like snidely whiplash.

    25:57-26:08

"He he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he he I believe that those people are absolutely sincere.

    26:11-26:18

I'm like, "Well, what happens?" They think they're sincere, but then the ministry becomes a job.

    26:20-26:24

And in the ministry, the job requires performing for people.

    26:27-26:34

So it's easy to just focus on the performance instead of focusing on my own walk with Christ.

    26:35-26:35

    You understand?

    26:36-26:49

Instead of me on my face and praying and allowing Christ to continue to grow me and change me and teach me, it's just easier to get the performance down.

    26:51-26:52

    To put on a show.

    26:54-26:55

    But Jesus knows.

    26:57-26:57

    He knows.

    26:58-26:59

And He warns us to beware.

    27:02-27:08

Jesus' last warning here, "Beware, they are damned." They are damned.

    27:08-27:12

Look at verse 40 with me again.

    27:12-27:23

Jesus said, "They will receive the greater condemnation." This could be a whole other sermon, but do you know that there are different degrees of suffering in hell?

    27:23-27:24

    Did you know that?

    27:25-27:26

You know that hell is not going to be the same for everyone.

    27:28-27:30

There are different degrees of suffering in hell.

    27:32-27:35

In our text today, what I want to point out is, who gets the worst?

    27:37-27:38

    Who gets the worst?

    27:39-27:41

It's the guy who knows better.

    27:41-27:43

It's the guy who reads and teaches the Bible.

    27:44-27:47

And it's the guy that claims to represent God, but is faking.

    27:49-27:52

Jesus said that's the person that gets a greater condemnation.

    27:54-27:55

    Don't follow them.

    27:58-27:59

they're not going to end up anywhere good.

    28:02-28:04

As we close, I want us to look at these last few verses.

    28:07-28:14

And interestingly, one of our elders, Darren Keller, months ago, we were talking, do you remember this, Darren?

    28:15-28:31

We were talking about this passage, and Darren had said that he was doing some studying and listening to a sermon, and he said, And you know, this passage is often very misinterpreted.

    28:32-28:34

So I did a lot of study on this this week.

    28:37-28:41

And I want to read it, and I want you to think about the sermon that you usually hear with this passage.

    28:41-28:47

It says, "And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched people putting money into the offering box.

    28:47-28:49

Many rich people put in large sums.

    28:50-28:55

And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins which make a penny.

    28:55-29:07

And he called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box.

    29:08-29:30

For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on." Usually, this woman, this poor widow, is held up as the poster girl for sacrificial giving.

    29:32-29:35

So many sermons preached that way.

    29:36-29:37

This is how you should give.

    29:38-29:40

    Look at this widow.

    29:40-29:43

This widow is exactly how you should give.

    29:45-29:49

Giving is not determined by how much you put in, but by how much is left over.

    29:49-29:54

Do you see how she gave everything had to live on, you should give the same.

    29:54-29:57

And how many people have heard a sermon like that?

    30:01-30:14

Like I said, I've done a lot of studying this week and I encourage you to be a student of the Word and I'm convinced, and I would say thanks to the heads up from Darren Keller, I'm convinced that that's not what this passage is teaching at all.

    30:16-30:25

In your outline, the last point, it says this, "Do you see what I mean?" Do you see what I mean?

    30:25-30:27

I believe that that's what's happening in this passage.

    30:29-30:35

Jesus said, "Watch out for these scribes." He already announced that this place is a den of robbers.

    30:36-30:41

He talks about their phony religious acts.

    30:42-30:44

He talks about how they take advantage of widows.

    30:44-30:49

And then he sits down and sees a widow coming in and giving everything that she has.

    30:51-30:52

And that's what Jesus is saying here.

    30:52-30:54

He's pointing to that widow and saying, "See what I mean?

    30:55-30:59

That's exactly what I'm talking about." Is that a stretch?

    31:00-31:02

    Well, look at the text.

    31:02-31:05

Sometimes we make the Bible say things that it doesn't say.

    31:06-31:08

But notice nothing is said about this woman's motives.

    31:09-31:09

    Nothing.

    31:10-31:11

We don't even know if she knew the Lord.

    31:12-31:13

We know nothing about this woman.

    31:14-31:15

Nothing at all is said about her motives.

    31:16-31:19

Jesus didn't say, you know, she had such a heart for giving.

    31:19-31:21

Nothing at all is said about her motives.

    31:21-31:23

Jesus only commented on her actions.

    31:25-31:27

Nothing is said about her example.

    31:29-31:36

If Jesus was holding her up as the supreme example of giving, shouldn't the next verse say something like, "Judas, go and do likewise.

    31:37-31:40

Take our money and go put it in there just like this woman did.

    31:40-31:52

put all of our money into the offering at the temple just like she did. Jesus didn't do that. And sometimes we read into this passage like these rich people were the bad guys.

    31:52-32:05

Jesus didn't say that either. He didn't say, "Look at these hard-hearted, greedy Scrooge McDucks." He didn't say that. He didn't say anything about their heart either.

    32:09-32:11

All Do you see what I mean?

    32:14-32:23

Again if you look at the context, you look at the previous passage, already we've seen Jesus calls the temple a den of robbers.

    32:25-32:34

He's already called the scribes out for being hypocrites, and he's already condemned them for being people who consume widows.

    32:38-32:41

And Jesus sits down and watches a widow walk in.

    32:43-32:43

    You see what I mean?

    32:47-32:48

    Is this biblical giving?

    32:51-32:53

Is this woman the example of biblical giving?

    32:55-33:04

You have two coins left which, this is such a small amount of money that she was giving.

    33:06-33:08

That you should give it all to the hypocritical crooks.

    33:10-33:11

    Is that biblical giving?

    33:12-33:17

What we do see in the Bible over and over is God's concern that we care for widows.

    33:18-33:20

Is this act commended by Jesus?

    33:20-33:22

A widow that has to give up everything?

    33:24-33:28

I'm convinced that she's not an example of giving.

    33:29-33:33

I'm convinced that she's a victim of the very people that Jesus just said to beware of.

    33:35-33:39

There's a woman who was duped and is now being destroyed.

    33:40-33:41

    Their condemnation is justified.

    33:45-33:46

    Beware.

    33:46-33:47

    Beware.

    33:48-33:49

    So why should I beware?

    33:50-33:54

Jesus says, "Exhibit A." This is what phony religion does.

    33:57-34:05

In representing the text, church, the message today is really just one word.

    34:08-34:19

It's the word "Beware." Everyone out there wants your ear, they want your allegiance, and they want your money.

    34:20-34:21

    Beware.

    34:23-34:27

Everyone out there wants you to believe what they believe.

    34:29-34:29

    Beware.

    34:32-34:35

Those people out there are on a path to hell.

    34:38-34:39

They want you to walk with them.

    34:42-34:46

    Jesus says, "Beware."

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 12:38-44

  1. How can you tell if a religious leader is real or fake? What are some things Jesus said to look for?

  2. Why would phony religious leaders receive "greater condemnation" (Mk 12:40)? What does that say about hell?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another!
