Grow Up

Introduction:

It’s Time to Grow Up… (1 Corinthians 3:1–9)

  1. Because your childish THINKING holds you back. (1 Cor 3:1–2)

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped gfor every good work.

Hebrews 5:12-13 – For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.

  2. Because your childish BEHAVIOR hurts others. (1 Cor 3:3)

  3. Because your childish FAVORITISM highlights man and not God. (1 Cor 3:4–8)

  4. Because your childish SELFISHNESS hides your identity. (1 Cor 3:9)

God, help me to grow up. Today, I need to stop _______________________________________ and start _______________________________________.

Turn your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 3, verses 1-9.

    00:50-00:54

    1 Corinthians 3, verses 1-9.

    00:56-00:58

    It's time to grow up.

    01:00-01:02

Have you ever thought that about someone else?

    01:04-01:08

You ever thought that about a neighbor, a co-worker?

    01:09-01:11

Have you ever said that to someone else?

    01:12-01:43

to a friend to a family member and whenever you think or say that sentence it always comes the sense of Frustration a sense of disbelief that someone could be so immature that someone could be so childish. I Can distinctly remember a time where I thought and said that exact sentence. It's time to grow up It was years ago as I was sick on the couch watching my favorite sick day show Dr. Phil.

    01:45-01:48

And don't judge me for my favorite sick time show.

    01:48-01:50

You probably don't have one that's much better.

    01:50-01:52

Maybe it's helped me with counseling over the years.

    01:52-01:53

    I don't really know.

    01:54-02:05

But I'll never forget this one particular episode as Dr. Phil interviewed a 24 year old man who considered himself 18 months old.

    02:06-02:09

    He was an adult baby.

    02:10-02:12

He slept in a massive custom crib.

    02:13-02:16

He had customized onesies in his closet.

    02:17-02:19

He wore diapers and he ate baby food.

    02:22-02:28

And Dr. Phil asked him, "Do you think you'll ever grow past this age?" Is that decent?

    02:28-02:29

I've been working on that all week.

    02:29-02:29

    Is that okay?

    02:30-02:33

My wife doesn't think it's really good, so I guess it's not.

    02:33-02:35

Pastor Jeff is encouraging me, though.

    02:36-02:37

And then Brett said, "I don't think so.

    02:37-02:42

"I've done a lot of research, And this is the age that I feel, 18 months.

    02:44-02:46

I was so disturbed by Brett's delusions.

    02:47-02:55

I was so bothered by his contentment with never growing up and the unwillingness of his loved ones to call him out.

    02:56-03:10

As I was sick on that couch, I wanted to climb through the TV and join Dr. Phil in saying, "It's time to grow up." You know what's even sadder to me than Brett's childish behavior?

    03:13-03:15

The childish lifestyle of many Christians.

    03:17-03:20

Adult babies are in every church.

    03:21-03:25

Adult babies are men and women who are content to never grow up.

    03:26-03:28

    Content to never mature.

    03:29-03:35

They are committed to staying right where they are and never making any progress.

    03:36-03:46

So many churches are content with pampering these adult babies, catering to their desires, and baby-proofing the Bible to avoid any sharp edges or offensive truths.

    03:47-03:54

So many pastors are committed to playing along with people's delusions, rather than lovingly calling them out.

    03:56-03:58

Thankfully, the Apostle Paul did not have that commitment.

    03:59-04:05

He had a much different commitment to the Corinthian Church who also had an adult baby problem.

    04:06-04:11

Paul was 100% committed to this church's unity and purity.

    04:12-04:15

He had no interest in playing along with their delusions.

    04:16-04:22

He was unwilling to clean up their toys, snap on their onesies, and tuck them into their adult cribs.

    04:22-04:29

He was unafraid to burst their bubble and to lovingly call them out.

    04:32-04:37

Because their behavior was unacceptable to God was damaging to the entire church.

    04:37-04:43

Paul was bold in calling out the Corinthians and saying, okay, it's time to get your big boy pants on.

    04:44-04:46

    It's time to grow up.

    04:48-04:52

And this message from Paul wasn't just for the Corinthians almost 2,000 years ago.

    04:54-04:58

This message from Paul is for Harvest Bible Chapel today.

    04:59-05:03

And I really don't want you to think, oh man, I wish so and so was here.

    05:03-05:06

He or she really needs to grow up.

    05:07-05:11

Listen, that person isn't here, but you are.

    05:13-05:16

You really need to hear this word from the Lord.

    05:18-05:22

In some ways or in many ways, you need to grow up.

    05:24-05:25

    I need to grow up.

    05:27-05:30

So before we continue any further, let's go to the Lord and ask for his help.

    05:31-05:37

pray for me that will faithfully proclaim God's word, and I will pray for you that you will faithfully receive it.

    05:41-05:44

Father, we just celebrated children in our church.

    05:44-05:45

    Children are a gift.

    05:45-05:46

    Children are a blessing.

    05:47-05:51

But Lord, when we as adults act like children, there's a huge problem.

    05:53-05:56

Lord, I admit to you that I can be an adult baby.

    05:57-05:58

    I can be childish.

    05:59-06:02

And I know the same is true for every single person in this room.

    06:02-06:05

Help us to stop thinking that this is for somebody else.

    06:06-06:09

This is a word for each and every one of us.

    06:10-06:15

I pray we'd walk out of this room as different people, that we'd be put on the path to maturity.

    06:17-06:20

We ask and pray all these things in Jesus' name, amen.

    06:22-06:23

    It's time to grow up.

    06:24-06:28

Reason number one, because your childish thinking holds you back.

    06:28-06:32

Your childish thinking holds you back.

    06:36-06:45

In last week's passage, the apostle Paul reminded us that everyone who is in Christ has been given the mind of Christ.

    06:46-06:47

That sounds really awesome, doesn't it?

    06:48-06:50

But what in the world does that mean?

    06:50-06:51

What is the mind of Christ?

    06:52-06:53

    God's word.

    06:53-06:56

You have been given God's word.

    06:56-06:59

You don't have to wonder what God thinks about anything.

    06:59-07:04

You don't have to wonder what God thinks about himself, salvation, or how you should live your life.

    07:04-07:06

He tells you in his word.

    07:06-07:16

He not only gives you his word, he gives you the Holy Spirit to help you understand this word and help you to understand how you apply it to your life.

    07:17-07:23

God doesn't tell you all that you could know, but he does tell you all that you need to know.

    07:24-07:29

Those who are spiritual are able to understand spiritual truths.

    07:31-07:33

Well, great, thanks Paul, I appreciate that.

    07:33-07:37

Whoa, whoa, there is a but coming in chapter three, verse one.

    07:38-07:39

    Listen to what Paul says.

    07:43-07:53

But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.

    07:54-07:59

At first glance, it seems like Paul is saying that there are no Christians in Corinth.

    08:00-08:07

This church is only made up of unsaved people who have no true life and no true relationship with God.

    08:08-08:10

But that's not what Paul is saying at all.

    08:11-08:20

There are true believers in Corinth, and there are two context clues in this verse that show us that Paul is talking to Corinthian Christians.

    08:21-08:23

First of all, Paul calls them brothers.

    08:25-08:28

Paul isn't Hulk Hogan, he doesn't call everybody brother.

    08:29-08:30

That was just for Pastor Jeff.

    08:32-08:37

Paul only calls his spiritual siblings brothers and sisters.

    08:37-08:39

This is a term of affection.

    08:40-08:46

Paul isn't coming in hot saying, "Okay, idiots, time to shut up and grow up." That's not what he's doing.

    08:46-08:51

He's not putting them in a headlock and giving them noogies until they do what he tells them to do.

    08:52-08:55

Now he's coming in with an arm around their shoulder.

    08:55-08:59

    Brothers, sisters, I love you.

    09:00-09:01

    You're my family.

    09:01-09:04

Jesus Christ loves you, but you're not acting like you love Jesus.

    09:05-09:07

    You're not acting like Christians.

    09:08-09:11

You're not acting like you have the Holy Spirit within you.

    09:12-09:18

You are letting your sinful desires, you are letting your flesh control you.

    09:20-09:23

And secondly, Paul calls them by another name.

    09:23-09:25

He calls them infants in Christ.

    09:26-09:27

    So they are in Christ.

    09:27-09:28

    They are saved.

    09:28-09:34

Their sins have been forgiven, but they are stuck in their immaturity.

    09:34-09:36

    They are standing still.

    09:38-09:46

And Paul is saying to them, I want to have an adult conversation with you, but all you can do is goo goo gaga and spit up all over yourself.

    09:48-09:50

What is the proof of their babiness?

    09:52-09:55

Verse chapter two tells us it's their spiritual diet.

    09:56-09:57

    Let's read verse two.

    09:58-10:08

I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it, and even now you are not yet ready.

    10:10-10:14

When my kids were born, I didn't throw them a pizza party in the delivery room.

    10:14-10:19

I didn't try to serve them a hot slice of pizza with extra cheese and pepperoni.

    10:20-10:20

    Why not?

    10:21-10:24

Because they were not ready for it.

    10:24-10:26

Their systems couldn't handle that kind of meal.

    10:27-10:35

When we brought Sam and then years later, Emmy home from the hospital, I didn't try to force feed them ribeye steak and corn on the cob.

    10:36-10:37

    Again, why not?

    10:37-10:40

Because they could not handle it.

    10:42-10:43

They were not ready for it.

    10:44-10:49

Newborns cannot eat corn on the cob, pizza, and steak.

    10:50-10:51

    Newborns cannot eat solid food.

    10:53-10:55

Babies can only be nourished by milk.

    10:57-10:59

But that was years ago, let's talk about now.

    11:00-11:02

Sam is six years old and Emmy is almost four.

    11:03-11:07

Should my kids be able to handle pizza, corn on the cob, and steak now?

    11:08-11:09

    Why is that?

    11:10-11:11

    Because they're older.

    11:11-11:19

They should be ready for solid food but they're not, there is something seriously wrong within them that Kate and I should not ignore.

    11:21-11:26

The Corinthian church should be ready for the solid food of God's word, but they're not.

    11:28-11:33

There is something seriously wrong within them that Paul cannot ignore.

    11:34-11:43

After years and years of being Christians, the Corinthians are still only drinking from the milk of the Bible basics.

    11:44-11:49

Their diet is way off because they have no desire to move forward.

    11:51-11:55

And to be clear, new believers do need the milk of the Bible basics.

    11:56-11:58

They do need the spiritual ABCs.

    11:59-12:05

God is holy, man is sinful, Jesus Christ came to die on the cross and everyone who trusts in him will be forgiven.

    12:06-12:08

Jesus loves me, this I know for the?

    12:10-12:12

Yes and amen to all these truths.

    12:12-12:15

We do touch on these essentials every single week, don't we?

    12:16-12:19

These are the foundation of our faith.

    12:19-12:22

But do you agree there's way more to the story?

    12:23-12:24

    There's way more to know.

    12:24-12:26

    There's way more to learn.

    12:28-12:33

At the beginning of your spiritual life, you must be fed like a spiritual newborn.

    12:35-12:45

But as time goes on, your diet should progress so that you can progress, that you can grow in your faith and make improvements.

    12:47-12:54

I'm not a dietician by any stretch of the imagination, but to grow big and strong physically, you need a certain calorie intake.

    12:55-12:59

You need to eat from a wide variety of food groups.

    13:00-13:06

To grow big and strong spiritually, you need to consume a significant amount of God's word.

    13:07-13:12

You need to have a balanced understanding of the Old Testament and the New Testament.

    13:12-13:15

You shouldn't say, "You know what, "that book isn't really for me." No, they're all for you.

    13:15-13:19

All 66 books of the Bible are essential for your growth.

    13:20-13:35

You should make the attempt to have a balanced understanding of the major topics of Scripture, the character and attributes of God, the person and work of Jesus Christ, sanctification, the church, end times, and on and on the list goes.

    13:37-13:59

As Paul says in 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 through 17, all scripture, not just some, not just most, all scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training and righteousness that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

    14:00-14:04

It takes the whole Bible to make you a whole person.

    14:06-14:10

you should have an appetite for the solid food of Scripture.

    14:10-14:20

Your knowledge of and your love for God's word should increase day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year, and again, if it's not, there's a problem.

    14:22-14:26

Your desire to obey God's word should increase over time.

    14:27-14:34

If you truly have the mind of Christ, you should love the thoughts of Christ.

    14:37-14:43

And the author of Hebrews explains the long-term side effects of only drinking milk.

    14:43-14:51

He says this, "For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God.

    14:51-14:53

You need milk, not solid food.

    14:54-15:15

For everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child." I'm gonna be very blunt for the next few minutes and I've been praying for this section of the sermon all week long because I want you to receive what I'm about to offer with the intention I give it.

    15:15-15:18

This comes from love and concern.

    15:20-15:24

Some of you have only been drinking milk for years and it shows.

    15:26-15:37

Some of you are still spiritual newborns and not spiritual adults, even though you've followed Christ for years, maybe even decades.

    15:38-15:43

Some of you should be ready for the solid food of Scripture, but you're not.

    15:45-15:50

Some of you should be ready to teach the Bible back in Harvest Academy, but you're not.

    15:51-15:57

Some of you should be able to pray in front of other believers, lead prayer groups to prayer services, but you're not.

    15:59-16:09

Some of you men should be elder qualified by now and ready to help shepherd this flock and shoulder the responsibility, but you're not.

    16:13-16:18

If I have described you on any level, please understand I'm not trying to scold you.

    16:18-16:20

I'm not trying to push you down.

    16:20-16:25

Like the Apostle Paul, I only have the desire to encourage you and to pull you up.

    16:26-16:28

Like the Apostle Paul, I wanna put a shoulder around you.

    16:28-16:36

Brother, sister, God has so much more for you in store if you'll just take a step forward and make progress by his grace.

    16:38-16:40

    Don't stay where you are.

    16:41-16:43

Don't be content to always drink milk.

    16:44-16:46

    Feast on this book.

    16:48-16:53

Do not be content to always swim in the shallow end of the gospel with your floaties on.

    16:54-16:57

    Dive in, explore, challenge yourself.

    16:58-17:04

Do not be content with riding with spiritual training wheels your entire life.

    17:05-17:12

Ask God to give you a sense of confidence so that you can ride with confidence and help other people to ride with confidence.

    17:14-17:16

    Repent of your laziness.

    17:17-17:20

Turn from your apathy to the things of God.

    17:20-17:30

Ask the Lord to give you a greater hunger for his word, a greater motivation to run after holiness, a greater commitment to the strength of this church.

    17:32-17:36

After service, ask a pastor or elder to pray for you.

    17:37-17:43

Ask a mature member of this congregation or a godly friend to help you and to keep you accountable.

    17:44-17:55

It's time to grow up because your childish thinking holds you back from being who God has created you to be and doing what God has called you to do.

    17:58-17:59

    It's time to grow up.

    18:00-18:04

Reason number two, because your childish behavior hurts others.

    18:05-18:08

    Your childish behavior hurts others.

    18:15-18:18

Paul goes on to give another example of the Corinthian sinful immaturity in verse three.

    18:20-18:22

For you are still of the flesh.

    18:22-18:36

For while there is jealousy and strife among you, "Are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?" Childish thinking always leads to childish behavior.

    18:37-18:45

And the childishness of the Corinthians can be summed up in two words, jealousy and strife.

    18:46-18:52

Jealousy is a serious case of dissatisfaction with what God has given to you.

    18:53-18:54

    You deserve more.

    18:54-18:55

    You deserve better.

    18:56-18:58

    You deserve whatever you want.

    18:59-19:04

When you are jealous of what someone else has, you cannot be content with what you have.

    19:06-19:12

If you are jealous of someone else's success, you cannot celebrate that person's success.

    19:14-19:17

    Strife is needless conflict.

    19:18-19:23

Strife leads to dumb division that can and should be avoided.

    19:25-19:29

Jealousy is an attitude and strife is the aftermath.

    19:30-19:36

Jealousy is the root and strife is the result.

    19:37-19:40

No one needs to teach you how to be jealous.

    19:42-19:45

No one needs to show you how to create strife.

    19:45-19:49

These sins are inherent within each and every one of us.

    19:50-19:54

If you don't believe me, just go back to Harvest Academy for a few minutes.

    19:54-19:59

You will see jealousy and strife sooner rather than later.

    19:59-20:02

Why does Susie have that toy and I don't?

    20:02-20:06

Oh, I hate Tommy and Joey because they never let me play with them.

    20:07-20:11

Oh, I'm not inviting Ruthie to my birthday party because she didn't invite Betty to hers.

    20:14-20:18

You may laugh at that, but the adults in the church are not much better than the kids, are they?

    20:20-20:22

    Listen, you can be jealous.

    20:24-20:24

    You.

    20:26-20:28

Maybe you're envious of someone else in this room.

    20:30-20:32

That person who has the marriage that you want.

    20:34-20:38

That parent who has more under control kids than you do.

    20:38-20:42

That person who seems to be more talented than you.

    20:43-20:50

You should be celebrating and rejoicing in God's good gifts to that brother or sister, but instead you resent them.

    20:51-20:54

And you want them to be knocked down a few pegs to feel how you feel.

    20:55-20:56

    You can be jealous.

    20:58-21:01

You can cause strife and factions in the church.

    21:02-21:05

You have a serious bone to pick with the leadership at Harvest.

    21:06-21:08

Instead of coming to the elders directly, you start whispering.

    21:09-21:11

    You start spreading misinformation.

    21:12-21:13

    You start spreading rumors.

    21:14-21:16

You are offended by someone else.

    21:17-21:23

Instead of going to that person directly, you go to other people to recruit them to your side.

    21:24-21:26

And you may say, oh, I'm just doing this to warn people.

    21:26-21:27

    No, you're not.

    21:27-21:31

You're doing this so that other people will like you more than that person.

    21:32-21:33

    Just be honest about it.

    21:36-21:37

Maybe you enjoy getting into fights.

    21:38-21:42

You enjoy making a big deal out of nothing.

    21:43-21:49

You lace up your boxing gloves and get into worthless, pointless battles with people.

    21:51-21:53

    Are you jealous right now?

    21:55-21:58

Are you causing strife right now?

    22:01-22:11

If you are jealous, if you are stirring up trouble, you're just acting like an adult baby and not a mature son or daughter of God.

    22:12-22:20

If you are stirring up trouble, If you have sinned against someone else, it's time to swallow your pride and admit what you've done.

    22:21-22:25

Kids sweep things under the rug and ignore it.

    22:25-22:28

Adults expose sin and confess it.

    22:30-22:38

It's time to grow up because your childish behavior hurts others, especially the people you love.

    22:40-22:47

It's time to grow up, reason number three, because your childish favoritism highlights man and not God.

    22:48-22:52

Because your childish favoritism highlights man and not God.

    22:57-23:05

Jealousy and strife at Corinth played out in a specific way and it led to people playing favorites with specific leaders.

    23:06-23:08

Let's see what Paul has to say about this in verse four.

    23:09-23:17

For when one says, I follow Paul, And another, I follow Apollos, are you not being merely human?

    23:19-23:24

Pastor Jeff preached on this favoritism controversy a few weeks ago, but Paul talks about it again, so what are we gonna do?

    23:24-23:25

We're gonna talk about it again.

    23:27-23:31

Paul was the one who planted the Corinthian church during his second missionary journey.

    23:32-23:35

And he was there for about a year and a half ministering, preaching, pastoring.

    23:37-23:39

And some people had a soft spot for Paul.

    23:39-23:42

They were nostalgic for him because he was the one who led them to Christ.

    23:43-23:50

After Paul left, Apollos comes to town, and he's a much better speaker, a much more dynamic preacher.

    23:50-23:54

    So many people prefer Apollos.

    23:55-24:04

And this history of favoritism led to both men having their own personal fan clubs, even though both men do not want their own personal fan clubs.

    24:05-24:12

In modern day terms, there is a Paul fan page on Facebook, and there's an opposing Apollos fan page on Facebook.

    24:13-24:16

There are trading cards with these men's faces and pastoral stats.

    24:17-24:23

There are YouTube channels that highlight and spell out their sermons and why they're so great.

    24:25-24:28

But Paul says this kind of favoritism is childish.

    24:28-24:30

It is not the way of heaven.

    24:30-24:32

It is the way of this world.

    24:33-24:37

He's saying, if you say I follow Paul or I follow Apollos, grow up.

    24:38-24:39

    You're acting like a child.

    24:40-24:41

You need to cut it out.

    24:43-24:48

And Paul gives a reason why he and Apollos are not worthy of these cult followings in verse five.

    24:49-24:51

    What then is Apollos?

    24:51-24:52

    What is Paul?

    24:53-24:57

Servants through whom you believed as the Lord assigned to each.

    24:59-25:01

Paul and Apollos are not celebrities.

    25:02-25:03

    They're not superstars.

    25:04-25:05

    They're not mega church pastors.

    25:05-25:07

Who are they according to this verse?

    25:09-25:09

    Servants.

    25:11-25:13

This word can also be translated as table waiters.

    25:15-25:17

Waiters do not cook the food.

    25:18-25:20

    They simply deliver the food.

    25:21-25:23

    Busboys simply clean up.

    25:26-25:30

Paul and Apollos are just lowly busboys in God's restaurant.

    25:33-25:35

Last time I checked, there are no busboy enthusiasts.

    25:36-25:38

There are no busboy trading cards.

    25:38-25:41

There are no busboy YouTube channels.

    25:42-25:46

When was the last time you're at a restaurant and thought to yourself, man, this table is spotless.

    25:46-25:48

I don't even need a plate, I can just eat right off of it.

    25:48-25:50

I'm gonna go find the busboy and congratulate him.

    25:51-25:52

Has that ever happened to you?

    25:53-25:55

    And Paul's saying, I'm just a busboy.

    25:55-25:58

I'm not worthy of anything that you want to give me.

    25:58-26:02

He's knocking himself off the pedestal that the Corinthians have put him on.

    26:03-26:06

He's demystifying Apollos and putting him in his place too.

    26:08-26:09

They are just servants of the Lord.

    26:10-26:11

They are servants of the Corinthian church.

    26:14-26:16

But Paul isn't done lowering himself yet.

    26:17-26:19

He and Apollos are not just busboys.

    26:20-26:23

They're also farmhands according to verses six and seven.

    26:24-26:28

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.

    26:29-26:35

So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God gives the growth.

    26:37-26:38

    I've never farmed before.

    26:40-26:44

I've never even kept a garden before in my entire life.

    26:44-26:49

The last time I can remember planting a seed was in first grade with that cup on the windowsill, that cup of dirt.

    26:50-26:54

I'm not a farmer, but I do know a farmer in our congregation.

    26:54-27:04

I spoke to Jesse Hogan last week and I asked him, "How much credit can you take for a good harvester crop?" Do you wanna know what farmer Jesse said?

    27:05-27:05

    None.

    27:07-27:13

All I can do is plant, pray for good weather, and trust that God will bring the growth.

    27:13-27:16

    Trust the results to God.

    27:17-27:23

Jesse is a successful farmer because he understands his place in the process.

    27:24-27:26

He entrusts the results to God.

    27:26-27:28

    He knows his limitations.

    27:29-27:36

Paul is successful as a pastor, as an evangelist, as a church planner, because he knows his place in the process.

    27:37-27:39

He trusts the results to God.

    27:39-27:41

    Paul knows his limitations.

    27:41-27:44

Paul is saying, I planted the church in Corinth.

    27:45-27:49

Apollos watered it with his faithful preaching, but who alone gets the credit?

    27:50-27:52

Who alone gets the glory for the growth?

    27:53-27:55

    God, and God alone.

    27:57-28:00

Once again, Paul and Apollos are nothing special.

    28:01-28:05

They are just farmhands who plant and water the seeds of the gospel.

    28:05-28:06

    That's it.

    28:08-28:15

Paul goes on to give yet another reason why he and Apollos shouldn't be pitted against each other in verse eight.

    28:16-28:23

He who plants and he who waters are one and each will receive his wages according to his labor.

    28:25-28:30

There is no reason for Paul and Apollos to compete because they are on the same team.

    28:31-28:32

    They are one.

    28:34-28:39

I've already admitted that I'm not a farmer, but I may be a better farmer than I am an athlete.

    28:41-28:43

Some of you were laughing too hard at that.

    28:44-28:52

But I did play basketball from sixth to 12th grade, and I can remember distinct games where every man on our team was out for himself.

    28:53-28:55

Every man was trying to show off.

    28:56-29:00

Every man was trying to show everyone how great he was.

    29:01-29:05

And that never led to victory because we forgot that we were one.

    29:06-29:09

We forgot that we were on the same team.

    29:11-29:15

Like I also remember other games when we did come together as a cohesive whole.

    29:15-29:19

Everyone wasn't trying to win for himself, trying to win for the entire team.

    29:19-29:24

In those moments, we were one, we were on the same team, which often led to victory.

    29:26-29:30

We are on the same team at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    29:31-29:37

We should be pulling together to be one in the Lord rather than pulling apart to try and be special on our own.

    29:38-29:40

On my own, I am a zero.

    29:41-29:45

On your own, you are a zero, but together we are one.

    29:47-29:50

Our strength comes from our unity.

    29:52-29:59

Recently a member of our church paid the highest compliment to this church that made my entire year.

    30:00-30:13

She said, "To be honest, I don't really care "who preaches on a Sunday morning, "because I know, I trust that everyone who preaches "at harvest will be faithful to God's word." That is the goal.

    30:13-30:15

    That woman gets it.

    30:15-30:18

That is what Paul is talking about in this verse.

    30:18-30:22

It's not about the servant, it's about the one we serve.

    30:22-30:27

It's not about the busboy, it's about the one who owns all things.

    30:27-30:33

It is not about the farmhand, it's about the only one who gives the growth.

    30:35-30:38

Playing favorites in the church is stupid.

    30:39-30:39

    It is immature.

    30:40-30:42

    It is childish foolishness.

    30:43-30:46

They try to figure out who's the best and who's the most important.

    30:46-30:47

We all have a role to play.

    30:48-30:51

No one's gifting or role is more important than another.

    30:52-30:59

And according to Paul, each worker will be paid by God himself, and God never stiffs his employees.

    31:00-31:03

He always gives infinitely satisfying rewards.

    31:04-31:10

So please, don't try to reward yourself by seeking after the affirmation and praise of others.

    31:10-31:16

Wait diligently for the rewards of God, 'cause they are coming.

    31:18-31:23

Adult babies live for the moment, but godly servants live for the long haul.

    31:25-31:29

It's time to grow up and start highlighting God and not man.

    31:31-31:38

It's time to grow up, final reason, because your childish selfishness hides your identity.

    31:39-31:43

Because your childish selfishness hides your identity.

    31:45-31:46

I'm gonna step up with verse nine.

    31:47-31:50

For we are God's fellow workers.

    31:51-31:54

You are God's field, God's building.

    31:56-31:59

I truly enjoy partnering with all of my coworkers.

    31:59-32:03

Missy, Jillian, Ashley, Pastor Rich, Pastor Jeff.

    32:04-32:05

    I love all my coworkers.

    32:06-32:10

But do you know which coworker I enjoy working with the most?

    32:11-32:11

    God.

    32:13-32:17

Pastor Jeff is a great boss, but do you know who's an even greater boss?

    32:18-32:19

    The Lord.

    32:20-32:30

So many pastors fall into sin and disqualify themselves from ministry because their childish selfishness hides their identity.

    32:31-32:33

They think they're the ones making things happen.

    32:34-32:38

They think that the church growth is happening because of them.

    32:38-32:40

They're in charge, they're running the show.

    32:42-32:43

    They end up becoming bullies.

    32:44-32:46

    They end up becoming tyrants.

    32:47-32:51

They forget they work with and for the God of the universe.

    32:51-32:56

Those pastors did not shed their own blood on the cross for the members of their church.

    32:57-32:59

Their churches do not belong to them.

    33:00-33:01

    Their churches belong to Christ.

    33:03-33:05

You do not belong to me.

    33:06-33:11

You do not belong to Justin Cady, Brian Behe, Pastor Rich, or even Pastor Jeff.

    33:11-33:14

If you have trusted in Christ, you belong to him.

    33:15-33:17

He's the one who shed his blood for you.

    33:17-33:19

He is the one who died for you.

    33:20-33:22

    You are God's field.

    33:22-33:24

    You are God's building.

    33:25-33:26

    That is who you are.

    33:29-33:32

Do not let your childish selfishness hide your identity any longer.

    33:33-33:37

Do not try to find your identity in what the world says to find it in.

    33:38-33:42

The world will tell you that you are the maker of your own meaning.

    33:43-33:45

Your worth is found in what you achieve.

    33:46-33:49

But that is not what Paul is saying in this verse.

    33:49-33:53

You are not a precious snowflake whose every one preference should be met.

    33:54-33:56

Your story is not the main event of this world.

    33:57-33:59

You are not the point of anything.

    34:01-34:06

You are just a small part of the field that God is cultivating.

    34:07-34:11

You are just a single brick in the beautiful structure that God is building.

    34:12-34:20

You are a part of the church of Jesus Christ, which will never, ever pass away.

    34:22-34:27

It's time to grow up and stop believing that life is all about you, because it's not.

    34:28-34:34

It's about the Lord, who will do great things in and through you.

    34:35-34:41

It's time to grow up and start remembering who you are and whose you are.

    34:44-34:48

Some of you in this room do not belong to Christ.

    34:50-34:54

You are not even an infant in Christ because you have not been born again.

    34:55-34:57

You are not a part of God's field.

    34:58-35:00

You are not a part of God's building.

    35:00-35:02

You are just a lonely seed.

    35:03-35:06

You are just a discarded brick.

    35:06-35:11

But your identity will change in an instant if you give your life to Jesus.

    35:12-35:17

If you trust in him as your savior who died on the cross for your sins.

    35:17-35:22

If you trust in him as the Lord of your life who has every right to tell you what to do.

    35:22-35:27

If you place your faith and trust in Christ, you will be adopted into his family.

    35:28-35:30

You will be planted into God's field.

    35:30-35:36

You will be slid into the perfect spot in this church that is reserved just for you.

    35:38-35:42

You will be placed on the path to mature adulthood in Christ.

    35:45-35:55

The biggest temptation for a sermon like this is to feel the sting of conviction in the moment and then do nothing with that conviction once you get home.

    35:57-35:59

But do you know what's the most childish thing of all?

    36:00-36:05

Knowing that something needs to change and then doing nothing about it.

    36:07-36:10

Please do not fall into that childish temptation.

    36:10-36:13

Choose to put away your childish thinking.

    36:13-36:16

Choose to put away your childish behavior.

    36:16-36:19

Choose to put away your childish favoritism.

    36:19-36:23

Choose to put away your childish selfishness.

    36:24-36:26

Brothers and sisters, it's time to mature.

    36:27-36:29

    It's time to grow up.

    36:31-36:33

But you can't grow up on your own, can you?

    36:34-36:39

You need God's help, because he is the expert on growth, not you.

    36:41-36:44

There are still two blanks left on your sheet that you need to fill in.

    36:46-36:49

These are a prayer to the Lord.

    36:50-36:52

God, help me to grow up.

    36:52-36:57

Today I need to stop blank and start blank.

    36:58-37:02

I have no idea what you need to fill in those blanks with, but you do.

    37:03-37:04

    And so does God.

    37:05-37:07

Maybe it's God, help me to grow up.

    37:07-37:12

Today I need to stop making excuses and start reading my Bible every morning at 7 a.m.

    37:13-37:15

Maybe it's God, help me to grow up.

    37:15-37:22

Today I need to stop being jealous of so and so at small group and start being content with what you have given me.

    37:23-37:30

It could be, God, help me to grow up today and I need to stop sitting on the church sidelines and start serving at harvest today.

    37:33-37:37

Don't be vague, because vague goals lead to disappointing results.

    37:37-37:41

    37:42-37:44

Take a few minutes to fill in those blanks.

    37:45-37:51

Take a few moments to go to the Lord, to confess sin, to ask for his help.

    37:52-37:54

Ask him to empower you to change.

    37:55-37:59

Ask for his help so that you can be empowered to take steps to grow up.

    38:00-38:02

Fill in those blanks and spend some time in the Lord with prayer.

    38:05-38:08

Father, I thank you for your immense patience with us.

    38:09-38:14

I know as a father I can be so impatient with my children at times, but Lord, you are so long-suffering.

    38:16-38:18

But all of us in this room can be childish.

    38:19-38:21

All of us in this room can be immature.

    38:22-38:25

Lord, may today be a brand new day of transformation.

    38:25-38:32

May today be a day where a first step is taken, where growth happens by your grace and by the power of your spirit.

    38:33-38:51

Lord, may we not just be convicted in this moment, be convicted the rest of today, the rest of this week and the rest of our lives to seek after you and your word, to pursue after the unity of the church, and to fit into our exact spot in the church.

    38:52-38:56

Lord, I thank you for what your Holy Spirit has done this morning, and I thank you in advance for what he will do.

    38:57-38:59

I ask all these things in Jesus' name.

    39:00-39:00

    Amen.

Open up to 1 Corinthians 2.

    00:47-00:49

Let's just pause for a moment.

    00:49-00:54

Please pray for me to be faithful to clearly communicate God's Word.

    00:54-00:57

And I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive it.

    00:58-01:03

    This is a complicated passage.

    01:05-01:10

But I think that's one of the great things about expository preaching.

    01:10-01:18

It allows us to slow down and see what exactly it is that God actually said in His Word.

    01:18-01:30

Sometimes it's a passage that we have read through quickly so many times, like, "I'm not quite sure what's going on there, but next." And there's so much here that the Lord wants to teach us.

    01:30-01:37

So please pray for me to be clear and accurate and I'll pray for you to receive it.

    01:38-01:39

Alright? Let's just take a moment.

    01:48-01:51

Father in Heaven, we need Your Spirit, and we always do.

    01:52-01:58

I guess sometimes I feel it and I'm more aware of it than others.

    01:58-02:01

This is one of those times for a lot of reasons.

    02:03-02:09

I pray that Your Spirit and Your Word would do what only You can do.

    02:11-02:15

Glorify Your name as we spend some time in Your Word today, Father, in Jesus' name.

    02:15-02:21

All of God's people said, "Amen." Amen.

    02:21-02:25

    You know, I try.

    02:29-02:35

But it gets harder and harder to keep up with the language that these kids are using these days.

    02:38-02:44

Since I'm working with the youth group, I really wanna speak their language, but I'll be honest with you, I don't get it.

    02:46-02:46

    I don't get it.

    02:46-02:49

I'm not sure Justin, you still get it anymore.

    02:51-02:52

    Mid, see, he gets it.

    02:56-02:59

I just find myself so often, I don't get it.

    02:59-03:00

    I don't get what you're saying.

    03:01-03:06

Like Pastor Taylor, a couple of weeks ago, dropped the six, seven thing.

    03:06-03:11

Do you know like dictionary.com or something made that the word of the year?

    03:11-03:12

    Did you know that?

    03:14-03:16

I don't, and do you know where that's from?

    03:16-03:18

It's from some basketball player that's six, seven.

    03:18-03:19

    Like, aren't they all?

    03:23-03:24

    I don't get it.

    03:25-03:30

I don't get it when the kids say words like skibbity toilet riz.

    03:30-04:05

Have you heard this one? I had to have somebody explain it to me and I still didn't quite understand it, but that is a thing and I don't get it. I just don't get it. I remember many years ago when the nieces on my wife's side were younger, probably teenagers-ish, but one family gathered. It was Thanksgiving, Christmas, whatever. I just remember the three girls were just walking around going, "I just bought a new alligator purse at Walmart for 4.99." And then they would laugh hysterically.

    04:08-04:10

So I'm like, well, I went in on the hilarity.

    04:11-04:15

So I'm like, "Well, I just bought a new alligator purse at Walmart for 4.99." And everybody laughed hysterically.

    04:16-04:17

    I don't get it.

    04:19-04:24

I don't get, I don't get the Lulu and zhuzh it up.

    04:25-04:58

And by the time this is on our website, somebody's going to listen to this and be like, "Oh, those are old words. We don't say that anymore." I try. I don't get it. And see, that is the point of the passage that we're looking at today. Here's the whole sermon. When it comes to the Word of God, unsaved Many people don't get it.

    05:01-05:12

But those who are born again, who have the Spirit of God residing in them, we come to the Word of God and we get it.

    05:14-05:21

This whole section that we're in, in 1 Corinthians, is contrasting man's wisdom and God's wisdom.

    05:22-05:26

So last week we focused specifically on the show.

    05:27-05:27

    Why?

    05:27-05:29

Because Paul says he came in weakness.

    05:29-05:34

He wasn't like one of the lofty speaking philosophers putting on a show.

    05:35-05:39

Paul says, "I didn't come to you like that." So last week we talked about the show.

    05:40-05:47

This week we're going to talk about the content, the content of wisdom.

    05:47-06:33

Look at verse six. He says, "Yet among the mature, we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age who are doomed to pass away." Okay, so there's two kinds of wisdom. We talked about this many times in pastime, going through Proverbs, going through the book of James. There's two kinds of wisdom. There's man's wisdom, worldly wisdom, earthly wisdom, and there's God's wisdom. Okay? And that's what Paul's talking about here. Paul's like, "Don't throw out anything called wisdom because there's different kinds." We didn't come with man's wisdom, we came with God's wisdom.

    06:34-07:02

Now listen, when we talk about man's wisdom, we are not saying that man is incapable of doing anything with earthly wisdom. Man has done so much with medical advances, engineering, art, obviously. But, but, man's wisdom cannot do anything about spiritual matters.

    07:06-07:12

When you try to apply man's wisdom to spiritual matters, do you know what you get?

    07:13-07:14

You get one of two things.

    07:14-07:19

You get heresy or you get nonsense, or maybe you get both.

    07:21-07:25

But Paul here talks about the rulers of this age.

    07:25-07:28

It's not a wisdom of the rulers of this age.

    07:28-07:31

Like who are the rulers of this age?

    07:32-07:35

On Paul's day, right, scribes, Pharisees, Roman officials.

    07:38-07:41

    It's the important people, right?

    07:41-07:43

And who are the rulers of our age?

    07:43-07:44

    It's pretty obvious.

    07:46-07:57

Politicians, celebrities, the loud anti-God, actors, musicians, athletes.

    08:01-08:09

You know, church, if I live to be a billion, I will never understand why we take so much stock in the opinions of celebrities.

    08:09-08:11

    I don't understand that.

    08:13-08:22

You know, like somebody is paid millions of dollars because they're able to catch a ball, which is a talent.

    08:22-08:23

    Don't get me wrong.

    08:24-08:25

    It's a talent.

    08:25-08:30

But all of the sudden, we're like, well, I gotta hear what his political views are.

    08:32-08:33

    Why?

    08:34-08:39

Or you got some young lady who, she writes songs for a living.

    08:39-08:43

She writes really catchy pop songs about bad relationships.

    08:45-08:48

And we're like, man, I wonder what she thinks about immigration.

    08:50-08:53

Why do we care what, right?

    08:53-09:17

Or an actor whose very job is to pretend to be someone else, and they are fantastic at pretending to be someone else, and the world is just waiting to hear, "What do you think about God?" Paul says, "I'll tell you what to think about them.

    09:18-09:27

They're doomed to pass away." God's Word will stand forever, but a celebrity's opinion will be forgotten.

    09:29-09:30

    So look at verse 7.

    09:33-09:46

He says, "But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.

    09:47-09:59

None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." So you hear Paul talking about the secret wisdom.

    09:59-10:10

These are spiritual truths that man cannot know unless God reveals them.

    10:13-10:26

God has revealed knowledge about Himself, Paul says, for the glory of His people, and he says those who are not born again, they don't get it.

    10:27-10:29

    They don't get it.

    10:29-10:31

That's why he says, "None understood.

    10:32-10:38

None of the rulers of this age understood." They don't get it.

    10:44-10:45

    They can't get it.

    10:48-10:53

Paul says in verse 8, here's an obvious point that they don't get it.

    10:55-10:59

God showed up in the flesh and they nailed Him to a cross.

    10:59-11:04

Like do you think for a second if they really understood who Jesus is that they would have crucified Him?

    11:05-11:09

Do you think for a second if they're like, "Well, this is the God who created me.

    11:09-11:12

This is the God who's ultimately going to judge me, and He's here right now.

    11:12-11:15

What should we do with Him?" Do you think they would have killed Him if they got that?

    11:17-11:17

    Obviously not.

    11:20-11:46

Now look at verse 9, he says, "But as it is written, 'What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.'" So here Paul is paraphrasing concepts from the book of Isaiah, specifically Isaiah 64 verse 4.

    11:47-12:02

Now listen, when people read this verse, people immediately want to interpret this as, "You can't believe how awesome heaven is." "You can't believe the things that God has prepared for us." And that's really not what this verse is about at all.

    12:04-12:14

Listen, this verse is about unbelievers not being able to understand salvation.

    12:15-12:52

Unbelievers don't get it. That's what this verse is about. Look at it again. He's saying that spiritual truths about salvation can't be obtained Through natural processes look at look at it again. He says what no I has seen nor ear heard He's saying unsaved people can't understand spiritual truths by external means Meaning, you can't look at a sunset, or the stars in the sky, and understand salvation.

    12:52-12:56

You can understand some things about the power and beauty of God, yes.

    12:58-13:03

But you can't look at a sunset and understand salvation.

    13:05-13:07

You can't perceive it with your eyes or your ears.

    13:08-13:41

Then he goes on to say, "Nor the heart of man imagined." saying that's internal, that you can't come up with truth about God from your mind. You can't just sit around and say, "I wonder what God's like," and you imagine truths about salvation. It can't happen. People try, though. You hear people say things like, "Well, you You know, I think that we're all God's children.

    13:41-13:43

I believe love is the only thing that matters.

    13:44-13:46

I don't believe God condemns anybody.

    13:46-13:49

And with all due respect, it doesn't really matter what your opinion of God is.

    13:53-13:57

It's like a fruit fly trying to figure out how an iPhone works.

    13:58-13:58

    It's not going to happen.

    14:00-14:04

And you trying to figure out on your own how God works, it's not going to happen.

    14:05-14:07

    You can't do it.

    14:10-14:18

Truth about God must be revealed by God.

    14:19-14:20

    That's Paul's whole point here.

    14:20-14:26

Human perception or wisdom can't contribute to this.

    14:27-14:33

People have no idea, externally or internally, what God has prepared.

    14:35-14:49

for those who love him. They're like, "All right, I have a question. How exactly did God reveal His truth to man? How did He do that?" Well, that's what he goes on to answer.

    14:49-15:04

Look at verse 10. He says, "These things," what things? "The things that God has prepared, content of the gospel message. These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

    15:05-15:23

For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. So Paul says, "God revealed the content of the salvation message." He said he revealed it to us, and us in the Greek is emphatic.

    15:24-15:27

You're like, "Well, who is us?" Well, go back to verse 10.

    15:27-15:31

Us refers to those who love Him, right?

    15:33-15:34

Like what is He talking about here?

    15:36-15:55

Well, really, He's talking about something Jesus already gave us a heads up on back in Matthew chapter 11 when Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have, look at this, hidden these things.

    15:55-15:55

    What things?

    15:56-16:00

Matters of salvation, revelation from God, truth about God.

    16:00-16:08

You have hidden these things from the wise and understanding, the important people, the rulers of this age is what Paul calls them.

    16:09-16:19

Jesus says, "You've hidden them from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children." That's the point of this passage.

    16:20-16:22

Do you think you're so wise?

    16:23-16:23

    No, no, no, no.

    16:25-16:28

God has to reveal truth if you're going to know anything about God.

    16:29-16:32

And God didn't reveal it to the important people.

    16:32-16:36

He revealed it to the children - people who love Him.

    16:37-16:38

    That's His point.

    16:40-16:41

    He gives an easy analogy.

    16:41-16:42

    Look at v. 11.

    16:42-16:49

He says, "For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him.

    16:50-16:56

So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God, except the spirit of God.

    16:57-16:58

    That's an easy analogy.

    16:58-17:01

No one knows a man's thoughts except that man.

    17:04-17:09

I mean, I can wonder all the live long day what Bob Brown thinks.

    17:11-17:13

    I'm never going to know.

    17:16-17:20

his thoughts, his opinions, his hopes, his dreams, his fears.

    17:20-17:21

    That's all within him.

    17:22-17:27

Nobody knows that about Bob Brown the way Bob Brown knows that about Bob Brown, right?

    17:27-17:33

And the only way I'm going to get a clue on any of that is if he tells me, right?

    17:35-17:36

And that's what Paul's saying here.

    17:37-17:39

    Only God's spirit knows God.

    17:40-17:48

No one knows what God thinks but God, and God's spirit has to reveal God's thoughts to us.

    17:50-17:52

    You're like, what is that?

    17:54-17:55

    He's talking about the Bible.

    17:57-18:05

This book is the Holy Spirit revealing things that are known only to God.

    18:07-18:08

    Like, wait, wait, okay.

    18:09-18:14

So you're saying that this book is the book of God's thoughts.

    18:14-18:15

Yes, that's what the passage is saying.

    18:16-18:25

Well, how in the world could an infinite, holy, awesome God reveal his thoughts in a way that we could understand them?

    18:27-18:29

    'Cause he's way above us.

    18:29-18:36

How in the world could he reveal his thoughts so we could understand them?

    18:37-18:39

Verses 12 and 13, Paul answers that.

    18:40-18:53

He says, "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

    18:53-18:55

And we impart this in words." Look at this.

    18:56-19:09

"And we impart this in words, not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the spirit." Here it is, "Interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

    19:14-19:16

He's talking about how we got the Bible.

    19:16-19:21

When he says we here in verse 12, he's talking about the apostles, right?

    19:21-19:23

He's talking about, it's obvious from the context.

    19:24-19:26

God didn't give you books of the Bible to write down, right?

    19:27-19:31

You might have some blank pages at the end of your Bible, like in the book.

    19:31-19:34

That's not for you to write your own book, okay?

    19:34-19:35

That's not what those are for.

    19:37-19:43

You're like, "Well, what are they for?" I don't know what those are for, but they're not for writing your own parts of the Bible.

    19:44-19:46

    That was for the apostles.

    19:47-19:52

The apostles, Paul's saying here, received the Spirit to put God's thoughts into human words.

    19:53-19:56

Again, this is something that Jesus promised would happen.

    19:57-19:59

Look at John, what is it, 16?

    20:00-20:00

    Yeah.

    20:01-20:07

It says, "When the Spirit of truth comes," the Holy Spirit, "He will guide you into all the truth.

    20:07-20:18

For He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak, and He will declare to you the things that are to come." The things that are to come, excuse me.

    20:20-20:22

This is how you got your Bible.

    20:24-20:42

God's Spirit gave God's thoughts to these apostles and He enabled them to write God's thoughts down in a book, an objective source of God's truth.

    20:44-20:45

And you're like, "Okay, all right, all right.

    20:46-20:57

So if that is what the Bible actually is, the thoughts of God written in human words, Why doesn't everyone accept the Bible as the Word of God?

    20:58-20:59

Why doesn't everybody just get on board with that?

    21:00-21:01

Why doesn't everybody just understand it?

    21:04-21:07

All that Paul has said is to drive us to this point.

    21:08-21:08

    Are you still with me?

    21:10-21:11

    There's no sermon today.

    21:11-21:12

    It's like Sunday school.

    21:12-21:13

There's a little sermon at the end.

    21:13-21:15

This is like Sunday school class.

    21:16-21:19

Everything he's saying here is to drive us to this one point.

    21:21-21:33

Understanding the thoughts of God revealed by the Spirit of God put in this book, understanding this book also requires the work of the Holy Spirit.

    21:34-21:50

This is what he is driving us to. Look at verse 14. He says, "The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him." Foolishness to him.

    21:51-21:56

And he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.

    21:58-22:07

You see, Paul's saying the Holy Spirit gave God's Word to the apostles and he makes known the meaning of God's words to those who love God.

    22:07-22:09

    Non-spiritual people.

    22:09-22:17

Listen, you're like, "Why do we theology?" Because right now there's a whole lot of light bulbs that are going to go off.

    22:18-22:26

Non-spiritual people cannot accept the Word of God, and they do not understand the Word of God.

    22:26-22:28

That's what he says in verse 14.

    22:30-22:32

    Non-spiritual people cannot accept it.

    22:32-22:37

People who hate the Bible are just acting naturally.

    22:39-22:42

"Why do you hate the Bible so much?" Well, I'll give you a reason.

    22:42-22:45

He tells us right here in verse 14, "They don't understand it.

    22:47-22:48

    They don't understand it.

    22:50-22:51

It makes no sense to them.

    22:52-22:57

And listen, if you refuse to believe in the Word of God, you will never understand it.

    22:59-22:59

    Never going to happen.

    23:02-23:09

This is interesting, but like, what does this mean in real world application, Pastor Jeff?

    23:10-23:13

Well, let me tell you a lesson that I had to learn some time ago.

    23:15-23:25

I had to learn that you cannot put biblical standards on non-Christians for this very reason.

    23:27-23:31

They're like, "Can you be specific?" Yeah, how uncomfortable do you want this to get?

    23:32-23:37

All right, let's talk about people that are living together, but they're not married.

    23:38-23:41

They live as if they're married, but they never got married.

    23:41-23:42

    Cohabitation.

    23:43-23:46

I've dealt with this a lot, especially at my old church.

    23:46-23:48

    It was a downtown church.

    23:48-23:55

It was a big, old, beautiful building, and we would have complete strangers come in off the street, and they're like, "I want to get married here." Why?

    23:55-23:58

Not because they knew me or anybody else at the church.

    23:58-23:59

    It's just pretty architecture.

    23:59-24:03

"I want to get married here." But they were living together.

    24:05-24:12

We've had people like, "I want to join Harvest, and I want to actively serve at Harvest," And they're living together, but they're not married.

    24:16-24:21

And in all of these cases, people are outraged that we would say, "Well, that's sin.

    24:24-24:30

It's sin." People were like shocked and outraged that you would even hold such an opinion.

    24:31-24:32

What do you mean it's sin?

    24:37-24:42

And this is tying into Paul's point here, my friends.

    24:43-24:48

When a couple was in that situation, understand their biggest issue is not cohabitation.

    24:48-24:51

The biggest issue is they have no regard for God's Word.

    24:52-24:53

    That's the issue.

    24:55-25:01

And it's a scary thing because this is evidence that they don't have the Holy Spirit.

    25:03-25:07

And it's evidence, if all this is true, it's evidence that they're not born again.

    25:08-25:11

So you see, cohabitation isn't the biggest issue.

    25:13-25:16

Non-spiritual people don't get it, they can't accept it, they don't understand.

    25:20-25:22

Light bulbs should be going off.

    25:22-25:28

I hear this all the time, I hear this all the time and my heart breaks, but I hear people say, you know, people have adult children.

    25:29-25:34

I raised my kid in the church, and now he absolutely refuses to go to church.

    25:34-25:37

He doesn't want anything to do with church or Bible study.

    25:38-25:47

My teenager hates going to youth group, refuses to go, and they won't listen to any biblical instruction, and I don't understand why.

    25:50-25:54

I'll tell you why, if this passage is right, and I certainly believe that it is.

    25:58-25:59

The Bible makes no sense to them.

    26:03-26:04

    They don't believe it.

    26:06-26:06

    They don't get it.

    26:09-26:14

And when they come to church, they don't believe it, they don't accept it, they don't understand it, they don't get it.

    26:15-26:38

They come to church and They're like, "What's that all about?" They don't get it because it has to be spiritually discerned.

    26:42-26:46

You're like, "Oh, so you're saying I shouldn't drag my kids to church.

    26:46-26:49

You're saying I shouldn't teach my kids the Bible." Of course I'm not saying that.

    26:49-26:50

    Come on.

    26:53-27:23

But they aren't really going to get it if they don't personally make a decision to receive Jesus. That's what you need to drive them to. Look at verse 15. He says, "The spiritual person judges all things." Stop right there. This is a statement. We who are spiritual, we who have the Holy Spirit can judge all things. What's he talking about? He's just We're simply talking about this.

    27:23-27:27

The Bible, when rightly understood, makes sense of everything.

    27:27-27:29

It makes sense of the world.

    27:29-27:31

    It makes sense of man.

    27:31-27:33

    It makes sense of God.

    27:33-27:35

It makes sense of the way sin works.

    27:36-27:42

Understanding the world through the lens of God's Word when we understand it, makes everything make total sense to us.

    27:43-27:44

    We get it.

    27:45-27:47

We get why lost people act like lost people.

    27:48-27:48

    We get it.

    27:48-27:49

    You're spiritually dead.

    27:50-27:51

    We get it.

    27:52-27:52

    Bless you.

    27:52-27:54

We get why people get old and die.

    27:54-27:55

    We get it.

    27:56-27:57

    Why does that happen?

    27:58-27:59

    We get it.

    28:01-28:04

We get it when we have a loved one that's stuck in an addiction.

    28:05-28:06

    Like I get it.

    28:06-28:07

    It's a worship disorder.

    28:08-28:10

They're worshiping something and it's not Jesus.

    28:11-28:12

    It's an addiction.

    28:13-28:14

    We get it.

    28:15-28:17

We get it when a believer still struggles with sin.

    28:18-28:19

Like why is he still struggling with sin?

    28:19-28:20

    We get it.

    28:20-28:27

Because He's a spiritual person that lives in fallen flesh, so there's going to be a war going on until He's removed from the fallen flesh.

    28:27-28:28

    We get it.

    28:28-28:29

    It all makes sense.

    28:29-28:30

    We get it, church.

    28:33-28:37

We're rightly able to judge these things, and we're rightly able to judge what's happening out there.

    28:39-28:40

    We can watch the news.

    28:41-28:45

We can rightly judge all of that stuff, if you really understand the Bible.

    28:48-28:50

Like for example, what was the big news story last week?

    28:52-28:54

The SNAP benefits getting cut off, right?

    28:55-28:57

We can understand that through the lens of God's word.

    29:02-29:03

    Anybody not offended yet?

    29:03-29:04

'Cause you might be here in a second.

    29:07-29:09

Understand it through the lens of God's word?

    29:09-29:13

Look, the government doesn't need involved in that, in feeding people at all.

    29:14-29:15

    Whose job is that?

    29:15-29:16

    It's the church's job.

    29:17-29:24

And here's what should happen, the church should be providing for those in need who are unable to provide for themselves.

    29:26-29:30

But someone who can work and refuses to work doesn't get to eat.

    29:30-29:31

    That's what the Bible says.

    29:35-29:38

We can rightly judge all things, right?

    29:39-29:42

We rightly judge all things, things like racism is idiotic.

    29:42-29:43

    It's just stupid.

    29:46-29:47

    able to judge that.

    29:47-29:47

    Why?

    29:47-29:49

We realize we all came from the same parents.

    29:49-29:50

We all come from Adam and Eve.

    29:50-29:53

So if your skin's a different color, your eyes are a different shape, who cares?

    29:55-29:59

It's stupid, but people make that an issue because they don't get it.

    30:01-30:02

    We get it.

    30:02-30:02

    We get it.

    30:02-30:09

Why has Israel survived for thousands of years, even though everybody's constantly trying to exterminate them?

    30:10-30:12

Why are they front and center in the world stage all the time?

    30:12-30:12

    We get it.

    30:13-30:14

    We get it.

    30:15-30:19

That's what Paul's saying, "We judge all things." Like, yeah, we get it.

    30:21-30:24

But look at the back line of verse 15.

    30:25-30:38

He says, "But is himself judged by no one." "But is himself judged by no one." So Christian, don't worry about how the world judges you.

    30:41-30:44

Don't worry about how the world looks at you.

    30:48-30:58

You close-minded, anti-science, misguided, uneducated, unintelligent, fairy tale believing, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic jerk.

    31:01-31:02

Don't worry about what the world calls you.

    31:04-31:06

    They don't understand the Word.

    31:06-31:40

They don't value the Word, so they're not going to understand you, and they're not going value you either. You're judged by no one. Right? Now look at verse 16, "For who has understood the mind of the Lord as to instruct him?" That's Isaiah 40 verse 13. He says, but we have the mind of Christ." That last line, that's the punchline here.

    31:40-31:59

Everything he's saying gets to this one sentence, "but we have the mind of Christ." And if Paul would have just come out and said that first without any explanation, we would have been like, "What in the world are you talking about?" Well, who's the "we" here?

    32:00-32:01

    Why is he saying "we"?

    32:01-32:05

Why doesn't he say, "You have the mind of Christ"?

    32:05-32:05

    He could have.

    32:05-32:09

Why does he say, "We have the mind of Christ"?

    32:09-32:11

    Why "we" here?

    32:13-32:18

Well, what's Paul talking about throughout the first several chapters of 1 Corinthians?

    32:19-32:19

    What's he talking about?

    32:20-32:22

    Unity, right?

    32:26-32:33

Here's the point, unification can really only happen if we are all thinking the same way.

    32:34-32:40

If we have the mind of Christ, if we think like Jesus, that is what will unify we.

    32:41-32:43

That is what will unify us.

    32:47-32:52

This unity comes when I walk around here saying, "You all need to think like Jeff.

    32:54-32:56

You need to think like Jeff." That's the problem with this church.

    32:56-32:57

    Y'all don't think like Jeff.

    32:58-33:00

    That causes disunity, right?

    33:01-33:05

And then like Laura gets up and she goes, "No, the problem is you need to think like Laura.

    33:05-33:06

"That's the problem with this church.

    33:06-33:10

"Everybody think like Laura, we'll be good." And then Brian gets up.

    33:11-33:14

Brian's like, "No, no, the problem is "everybody needs to think like Brian.

    33:14-33:16

"You think like Brian, we'll be in good shape.

    33:16-33:19

"That'll unify us." No, no, no, that just causes division.

    33:20-33:22

We need to think like Jesus.

    33:27-33:29

You end with a statement like this.

    33:29-33:44

I couldn't just be like, "Okay, we have the mind of Christ, you're allowed to see you next week, so let's sing a song." That's such a statement that I figured we have to take a couple of minutes to unpack that.

    33:46-33:54

You have the mind, not, you should have the mind of Jesus.

    33:54-33:56

You have the mind of Jesus.

    33:56-33:57

    You do.

    34:00-34:03

And until you think like Jesus, church, we're never going to have unity here.

    34:04-34:06

We're always going to be fighting over something.

    34:10-34:12

So I do want to leave you with this.

    34:14-34:15

Just a couple more minutes here.

    34:16-34:23

So just grab your neighbor's sleeve right now, give them a shake and say, okay, the Sunday school lesson's over, now we're getting to the sermon.

    34:23-34:24

Take a minute and do that.

    34:26-34:27

Some of you aren't shaking hard enough.

    34:32-34:33

We're just gonna close with this.

    34:36-34:37

Like we have the mind of Christ.

    34:37-34:39

And you're like, well, how do I know?

    34:40-34:43

How do I know if I have the mind of Christ?

    34:43-34:44

    Well, Paul tells us.

    34:45-34:47

Under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul tells us in Philippians.

    34:48-34:50

Turn over in your Bible to Philippians chapter two.

    34:51-34:55

I know usually we like camp in one passage, but we can't just end with that statement.

    34:57-34:58

We have the mind of Christ.

    34:58-34:59

    What's that mean?

    34:59-35:01

Turn to Philippians chapter two, just over a few pages.

    35:06-35:07

Look at verses five through eight.

    35:09-35:15

Paul says, "Have this mind among yourselves." And you look at the context, He's talking about unity here again, right?

    35:18-35:23

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus.

    35:28-35:29

Do you have the mind of Christ?

    35:29-35:30

    Well, how do I know?

    35:31-35:32

How do I know if I have the mind of Christ?

    35:32-35:34

Write these three things down very quickly.

    35:34-35:39

Number one, you know you have the mind of Christ when I don't insist on my rights.

    35:41-35:44

I know I have the mind of Christ I don't insist on my rights.

    35:44-35:45

    Look at verse six.

    35:46-36:04

He says, talking about Jesus, "Who, though he was in the form of God, "did not count equality with God "a thing to be grasped." I know I have the mind of Christ, but I don't insist on my rights.

    36:05-36:09

In Jesus' mind, he didn't feel the need to tightly cling to the privilege that comes with being God.

    36:11-36:18

And oh, Jesus would have had every right to demand everyone treat him as God because he is.

    36:19-36:27

Jesus could have walked around on the earth and said, serve me, serve me, get me this, fetch me that, now chop, chop, I'm God, serve me.

    36:27-36:29

He could have gotten away with that.

    36:30-36:32

He's the only person in history that could have.

    36:35-36:36

    He let go of that.

    36:37-36:39

That was his right and he let go of it.

    36:41-36:46

and you have to get to the place where you made up your mind that you don't have to insist on your rights.

    36:47-36:54

I deserve more, I deserve better, I can't believe you asked me to do that, do you know how important I am?

    36:57-36:58

    Not thinking like Jesus.

    37:00-37:11

See, the world says, "Hey, you go out and you demand your rights." But when you think like Jesus, you say, "Eh, I let go of my rights." When you do that, you get it, you get it.

    37:13-37:15

How do I know if I have the mind of Christ?

    37:15-37:16

Number two, when I act like a servant.

    37:17-37:17

    Verse seven.

    37:21-37:22

    Verse seven.

    37:25-37:42

He says, "But made himself nothing, "taking the form of a servant, "being born in the likeness of men." We've done sermons on this in the past.

    37:43-37:48

This one phrase really stands out to me more than anything in this whole passage, really.

    37:48-37:50

It says that Jesus took the form of a servant.

    37:51-37:54

And you know you have the mind of Christ.

    37:54-37:58

You know you're thinking like Jesus when you act like a servant.

    38:01-38:03

By the way, God's wisdom is opposite of the world's wisdom.

    38:06-38:11

If I said, "Who's the greatest person in the world?" You would say, "Well, it's whoever has the most people serving Him," right?

    38:12-38:13

    That's how we determine greatness.

    38:14-38:16

Who has the most people serving them?

    38:18-38:23

Jesus said, "The greatest among you will be the servant of all." And His life was an example of such greatness.

    38:28-38:29

You know you have the mind of Christ when you act like a servant.

    38:31-38:31

Like, well, how do I do that?

    38:32-38:32

    Well, you won't know.

    38:33-38:40

You won't know if you're a servant until somebody treats you like one, then you find out.

    38:42-38:53

I mean, if you walked in here today and I had one of them stickers that said, hello, my name is, and I wrote on there, my name is slave, tell me what to do.

    38:53-38:55

And I slapped that on your chest.

    38:57-39:00

How would that make you feel if that's how everybody regards you?

    39:00-39:01

    "Hey, they're a slave.

    39:01-39:06

I'm going to tell them what to do." You won't know if you're a servant until somebody treats you like one.

    39:07-39:08

But God took the form of a servant.

    39:11-39:13

When you're like, "I'm here to serve," then you think like Jesus.

    39:15-39:23

Number three, how do I know I have the mind of Christ when I obey God all the way?

    39:23-39:24

    All the way.

    39:26-40:03

Conditionally, no limits. Look at verse eight. He says, "And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient." How far did you take that, Jesus? Obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. You see, Jesus' way of thinking determined what he did. He humbled himself and became obedient to his father all the way to death.

    40:04-40:33

And not just death, all the way to the worst way to die, death on a cross. All the way and everything else along the way, all the way, everything Jesus did was in obedience to the Father. So how far are you willing to take your service to God and to others?

    40:33-40:44

How far are you willing to go? How much is too much? If you say, "Well, yeah, okay, all All right, I'll serve in the church.

    40:45-40:48

All right, I'll serve, but only when it's convenient.

    40:51-40:52

    You're not thinking like Jesus.

    40:55-41:03

If you're like, okay, all right, I know I'm supposed to give to the church, and the Bible says that, we've walked through that, I'll give, but listen, I'm only going to give a little bit.

    41:03-41:07

I'm only going to give like what I won't miss.

    41:10-41:12

    You're not thinking like Jesus.

    41:15-41:16

And if you're like, yeah, you know what?

    41:17-41:19

That person wronged me, and yes, they reached out, they apologized.

    41:20-41:22

    I will never forgive her.

    41:22-41:28

I will never forgive her for what she did to me, no matter how many times she says she's sorry, I will never forgive her.

    41:31-41:32

    You're not thinking like Jesus.

    41:37-41:39

The world says be true to yourself.

    41:45-41:53

When you think like Jesus, you say, "I'm obedient to God no matter what.

    41:55-41:57

I'm going to take it all the way." You get it.

    41:59-41:59

    You get it.

    42:00-42:02

Our worship team will make their way back up front.

    42:04-42:08

You know, we could go on and on and on about the mind of Christ.

    42:12-42:13

But really, it can be summed up in one word.

    42:15-42:18

If you really say that Philippians 2 passage, the word is selfless.

    42:22-42:23

    Are you a selfless person?

    42:26-42:29

You will be if you think like Jesus.

    42:32-42:44

But when you have God's Spirit within you, enabling you to discern and understand and apply God's Word, you will think like Jesus.

    42:46-42:47

    You'll get it.

    42:49-42:50

    You will get it.

    42:51-42:52

    Let's pray.

    42:53-43:04

Father in heaven, That's such an interesting thing, the way your spirit works with your Word.

    43:08-43:18

Somebody could stand up here and preach the most biblically accurate message and it's going to go right over the head of people that don't have your spirit.

    43:21-43:27

Father, when your Spirit moves in the hearts of people and your Word is proclaimed, you You do something.

    43:28-43:30

And God, that's what I'm asking.

    43:31-43:43

Is that You would soften the hearts of those maybe who are sitting here and are hard-hearted and haven't been getting it for a long time.

    43:43-43:47

Those who are closed-minded towards Your Word, they don't get it.

    43:47-43:49

    Maybe they think they do.

    43:50-44:00

And I just pray, Father, for Your Spirit For all of us, You draw us just one step closer to You today.

    44:03-44:05

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

  • 00:39-00:42

Open those Bibles up to the book of 1 Corinthians.

    00:42-00:44

We're gonna be in chapter two.

    00:47-00:48

Let's just pause for a moment.

    00:51-00:56

And I'm going to ask that you would please pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's word accurately and clearly.

    00:57-01:02

I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive what God said in his word.

    01:02-01:04

    All right, let's pray.

    01:06-01:12

Father, there are so many things that compete for our attention and devotion.

    01:15-01:20

Give us a hunger for your word because it is through your word that we know you.

    01:24-01:32

So I pray, Father, that our appetites would be for nothing but the bread of your word.

    01:36-01:42

Let us dial into what your teaching is here in this passage, Father, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

    01:43-01:44

    Amen.

    01:45-01:47

1 Corinthians 2, are you there?

    01:49-01:57

I was today years old when I learned what that phrase meant.

    01:58-01:59

How many people have heard that?

    01:59-02:00

    I was today years old.

    02:00-02:01

How many have heard that one?

    02:01-02:02

How many of you use that?

    02:03-02:04

Some of you are like, I don't know what you're talking about.

    02:04-02:12

Well, maybe you're not hip like Justin Cady, knowing all the vernacular of the children, but let me give you an example.

    02:12-02:22

I was today years old when I learned that on a box of Tic Tacs, do you know when you open it up, there's this little oval in here?

    02:22-02:22

    Did you know?

    02:23-02:23

Do you know what that's for?

    02:24-02:28

That is to serve the Tic Tac.

    02:28-02:29

    Did you know that?

    02:30-02:33

Have you been just eating your Tic Tac straight from the box like a wolf?

    02:34-02:44

Like, did you know that you're supposed to use this thing to-- ta-da!

    02:47-02:49

Maybe you can flick it in your mouth.

    02:54-02:55

    Never mind.

    02:57-03:04

I'm going to give you-- in all seriousness, I'm going to give you the biggest and most shocking thing, right?

    03:06-03:15

The whole phrase, "I was today years old," means there's something I should have known, and I'm just finding out this thing that I should have known my whole life, and wow, it changes everything.

    03:15-03:17

Well, here's the biggest one of all time.

    03:18-03:25

Did you know that you have the ability to take power out of the cross of Jesus Christ?

    03:25-03:26

    Did you know that?

    03:26-03:34

You might be leaving here today saying, "I was today years old," when I learned I can empty the cross of Jesus Christ of its power.

    03:35-03:36

Do you realize you have that ability?

    03:39-03:41

The Bible says we do have that ability.

    03:42-03:44

Look back at chapter one, verse 17.

    03:44-03:50

We covered this a couple of weeks ago, but very briefly because I knew we would be hitting it hard this week.

    03:50-04:08

But chapter one, verse 17, Paul says, "For Christ did not send me to baptize, "but to preach the gospel, "and not with words of eloquent wisdom, "lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power." What?

    04:09-04:12

I can take power away from the cross of Christ?

    04:13-04:14

    That's what he said.

    04:16-04:20

How can I take power away from the cross?

    04:20-04:23

How can I empty the cross of Christ of power?

    04:24-04:26

He tells us right here in verse 17.

    04:29-04:32

    by relying on eloquent wisdom.

    04:34-04:36

    Look at chapter two.

    04:36-04:40

We're gonna look at the first five verses, but I want us to read it all first.

    04:43-04:46

I want us to be very clear what the Lord is saying here.

    04:47-05:05

Paul says, through inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "And when I came to you, brothers, "And I," excuse me, "when I came to you, brothers, "did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God "with lofty speech or wisdom.

    05:06-05:12

"For I decided to know nothing among you "except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

    05:14-05:41

"And I was with you in weakness and in fear "and much trembling, and my speech and my message "were not implausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." See a theme there?

    05:44-05:49

Over and over and over, he's talking about wisdom.

    05:49-05:57

And you're like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on, hang on, time out, Pastor Jeff, hang on." I thought wisdom was a good thing, right?

    05:57-06:02

I mean, we've had whole sermon series on wisdom and there's books in the Bible called wisdom literature.

    06:02-06:04

I thought wisdom was a good thing.

    06:04-06:08

Why are we pooh-poohing wisdom here today, Pastor Jeff?

    06:10-06:19

Well, wisdom is one of those words that can have different connotations depending on the context.

    06:20-06:21

A lot of words like that, right?

    06:22-06:24

    Like the word aggressive.

    06:26-06:29

Is aggressive, is that a good word or a bad word?

    06:30-06:33

Well, depends on where we're using it, right?

    06:33-06:35

It's great if you're playing hockey.

    06:37-06:38

    It's bad if you're in a meeting.

    06:40-06:40

    See?

    06:41-06:43

Or how about the word judge?

    06:43-06:45

You hear that word judge, is judging good or bad?

    06:46-06:47

Well, it depends how you use it.

    06:48-07:36

We are commanded to judge, to discern, but we are forbidden to judge in the sense of criticizing people like we talked about in the Sermon on the Mount. So you see, judge is bad or good depending on the context. And it's the same with wisdom, because the Bible's clear there is God's wisdom and there is man's wisdom. And the obvious point of this passage all circles around this idea of not man's worldly earthly wisdom. That's the point. He says it in verse one. He says it in verse four. He says it in verse five.

    07:38-07:55

So to sum up this passage, here's what Paul's saying. He's saying, I didn't come proclaiming "man's wisdom, my message was not in man's wisdom "and your faith can't be in man's wisdom." You're like, "What's he saying?

    07:57-07:58

    "What's the problem here?

    07:59-08:08

"Why is he so adamant about this?" Well, you have to understand something about the Greeks.

    08:10-08:14

You have to understand something about the people lived in Corinth.

    08:16-08:27

You see, for them, public speaking was entertainment and competition.

    08:28-08:34

Now, please dial in here, because if you miss this, you're gonna be so confused as we go through these verses.

    08:35-08:38

Public speaking was entertainment and competition.

    08:39-08:47

They would actually compete for money and prizes and fame with public speaking.

    08:49-08:54

So for the Greeks, those in Corinth, public speaking was putting on a show.

    08:54-08:57

    Public speaking was a performance.

    09:00-09:03

    Remember, they didn't have TV.

    09:04-09:09

They weren't sitting down to entertaining themselves by watching the Judge Judy or whatever.

    09:11-09:18

They didn't have the internet where they would sit on their phone and death scroll through countless videos about cats.

    09:19-09:20

That's not how they were entertained.

    09:21-09:25

They were entertained in the Greek culture by two things, really, sports.

    09:27-09:28

    We get that, right?

    09:29-09:34

But their other form of entertainment was public speech.

    09:37-09:43

And public speech, listen, public speech was evaluated on eloquence.

    09:44-09:45

    We get that.

    09:46-09:52

Because how many countless TV programs do we have about judging talent, right?

    09:53-10:01

There's the Americans Got Talent and American Idol and The Voice, The Masked Singer.

    10:02-10:03

    What else is there?

    10:03-10:06

All these shows where, you know, so you think you can dance.

    10:06-10:13

We're constantly evaluating the talent level of people on these programs.

    10:15-10:18

Public speaking was that in Corinth.

    10:20-10:23

Now, do you see the issue?

    10:27-10:33

Paul came to them with a speech, the gospel.

    10:34-10:43

He came to them with a speech and he came to a culture that evaluates a speech based on the performance of the performer.

    10:46-10:55

So if you look at this passage again, I'm gonna look at it again, just abbreviating it, but you could substitute this phrase where it talks about wisdom.

    10:55-10:57

You can substitute putting on a show.

    10:58-10:59

That's what he was talking about here.

    11:00-11:27

Paul's saying, "When I came to you brothers, "I did not come proclaiming you the testimony of God "by putting on a show." And then down in verse four, "My speech and my message was not about putting on a show." And then verse five, "Your faith might not rest in the show, "but the power of God." You see, that was the issue for that culture.

    11:28-11:36

And you're like, "Puh." Stinks for that culture because I get, you know what, Pastor Jeff, it would be absolutely horrible.

    11:37-11:44

I mean, it would be terrible if people today turned the gospel into a show.

    11:45-11:52

I mean, could you imagine how tacky it would be if people made church a performance?

    11:58-12:00

We don't have to stretch our imagination, do we?

    12:03-12:08

What do you see when you go to a lot of churches and Bible conferences, right?

    12:09-12:12

    Fog machines and lights.

    12:12-12:17

And how about a man pole dancing and swallowing swords?

    12:18-12:19

That happened at a men's conference.

    12:22-12:32

And oh, every spring I gag as I see churches promoting Some are at the movies.

    12:33-12:36

Life lessons according to Toy Story 2.

    12:39-12:43

Like really, you've preached through the whole Bible and you're out of material and now we're turning to Pixar.

    12:45-12:45

    Really?

    12:47-12:49

We made it into a show.

    12:50-12:52

Come to our church, we're dropping Easter eggs out of a helicopter.

    12:53-12:54

And you know what the worst is?

    12:54-12:56

This could be, and this is personal opinion.

    12:57-12:58

    This is the worst.

    12:58-13:02

The pastors that get on stage dressed up like a character.

    13:03-13:04

    Have you seen this?

    13:06-13:07

    Have you seen this nonsense?

    13:08-13:14

Pastor Taylor sent me a video for the record, making fun of it, okay?

    13:15-13:20

Not like, "Hey, this is a great idea." He sent me a video, right?

    13:20-13:21

I should have asked you that ahead of time.

    13:22-13:27

He sent me this video of a pastor that got on stage and their whole thing was Indiana Jones.

    13:27-13:32

And look, I love Indiana Jones, but the pastor was dressed like Indiana Jones.

    13:33-13:34

    It was so stupid.

    13:35-13:37

He had a whip and he's just standing up there.

    13:37-13:38

    (laughing)

    13:42-13:48

    It was so foolish.

    13:52-13:56

    I have a, I know a guy who's a pastor, local-ish.

    13:58-14:02

We're talking about what's happening in church, what's going on in your ministry right now.

    14:02-14:04

And he went on and on and on bragging.

    14:04-14:09

He bought an Evil Can Evil costume and preached as Evil Can Evil.

    14:10-14:16

I'm like, great, did you have to spend 20 minutes explaining to the people under 60 who Evil Can Evil is?

    14:18-14:19

    Like, really?

    14:19-14:20

    That's church?

    14:24-14:25

    What are we doing?

    14:28-14:38

And if you sit these people down that are putting on these performances, these pastors that are putting on these performances, like why are you doing this?

    14:38-14:43

Why are you standing on stage, waving a silly whip around like Indiana Jones?

    14:43-14:44

    What are you doing?

    14:44-14:46

They would say, well, that's how I get people to church.

    14:46-14:48

Hey, no need to thank me, Jesus.

    14:48-14:50

I have a brilliant plan to fill the seats.

    14:55-15:00

Just as said, churchgoers applaud these gimmicks because they get attention, right?

    15:02-15:04

That's why we're sharing these videos.

    15:04-15:05

    They get attention.

    15:08-15:11

Oh, but then we get outdo each other, don't we?

    15:12-15:16

He dressed like Indiana Jones next week, Harvest.

    15:17-15:20

You come to church next week, I'm gonna be dressed as Darth Vader.

    15:23-15:24

    Your faith is weak.

    15:26-15:27

    Won't that be awesome?

    15:29-15:31

You're like, no, Pastor Jeff, that would be stupid.

    15:32-15:33

    And you're right.

    15:35-15:41

We're gonna top the other guy, and then we're gonna top ourselves, right?

    15:42-15:49

Okay, so my thing with Darth Vader, people are clapping and giggling for that, so what am I gonna do next week that's better than that?

    15:50-15:50

    Right?

    15:51-15:57

dressed like one of those Lord of the Ring elves or something, and we'll blast fireworks on stage.

    15:59-16:00

    What are we doing?

    16:03-16:06

This is exactly what Paul's talking about here.

    16:07-16:12

This is the principle, lofty speech, human wisdom, plausible words.

    16:12-16:16

It's making the gospel into a show in order to win people.

    16:17-16:23

And Paul says, "I didn't do that when I came to you and harvest Bible chapel, we're not doing that either.

    16:26-16:30

And somebody right now is like, oh, Pastor Jeff, come on, what's the big deal?

    16:32-16:33

    Lighten up.

    16:34-16:42

I mean, if it draws people to church, why wouldn't we apply a little worldly wisdom?

    16:46-16:49

Listen, we are not putting on a show.

    16:50-16:52

We are not putting on a show.

    16:55-16:57

That is a hill that I will die on.

    16:59-17:02

You're like, well, what's the issue?

    17:02-17:06

Well, let's revisit the text here, and we're gonna see it's a much bigger issue than you think.

    17:08-17:09

We're not putting on a show.

    17:09-17:09

    Write some things down.

    17:10-17:13

Number one, because the show will replace God's message.

    17:14-17:19

That's why the show, the show will replace God's message.

    17:19-17:20

Look at the first two verses again.

    17:20-17:40

Paul says, "And I, when I came to you, brothers, "did not come proclaiming to you "the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom, "for I decided to know nothing among you "except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

    17:43-17:46

"When I came to you," when I came to you, you can revisit this story.

    17:46-17:52

Acts chapter 17, Paul was in Athens And he preached and response, not so great.

    17:54-18:03

Then Acts chapter 18, he goes to Corinth, he's alone and he's looking around and he's like, this place is even worse than Athens.

    18:05-18:10

And Paul here is saying, so when I came to you, did I come with the fancy talk?

    18:11-18:15

Did I come like your public speakers putting on a show for you?

    18:18-18:20

He's like, "No, no, no, no, the gospel isn't about that.

    18:20-18:23

"I didn't come to you like one of your philosophers.

    18:23-18:31

"I came to you as a witness of Jesus Christ." And I love this, what is it, verse two?

    18:31-18:35

He says, "For I decided." Wasn't a whim.

    18:37-18:40

It wasn't one of those tweak and go things, last minute change.

    18:40-18:41

He goes, "No, no, no, no, no.

    18:41-18:44

"I made the decision ahead of time.

    18:45-18:52

"I'm not going into Corinth, "and I'm not gonna try to dazzle them into the kingdom." By the way, do you think Paul could have?

    18:52-18:56

Do you think he had the ability to dazzle people with the knowledge that he had?

    18:57-18:58

    Yeah, he could have.

    18:59-19:06

But he said, "I will not do that." So what was your plan, Paul?

    19:08-19:15

He tells us, "This was my plan," verse two, "for I decided to know nothing among you." Except what?

    19:15-19:16

    Say it.

    19:18-19:19

    Jesus Christ and say it.

    19:20-19:22

    Him crucified, that's it.

    19:22-19:23

That's all I wanted to know.

    19:26-19:26

    That's it.

    19:27-19:33

The only thing I wanted to know, the only thing I wanted to teach, the only thing I wanted to talk about was Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

    19:34-19:35

And you're like, "Well, timeout question.

    19:37-19:39

"Isn't there more to the Bible than that?

    19:39-19:47

"I mean, isn't there more to the Bible than that?" Nope, there's not.

    19:49-19:58

Listen, the cross of Jesus Christ is literally everything.

    20:00-20:01

    Everything.

    20:03-20:05

How is it that a person is saved?

    20:06-20:12

How is it that a person can have their sins taken away and the promise of being in glory with their God forever?

    20:13-20:13

    How does that happen?

    20:15-20:16

    The cross of Jesus Christ.

    20:19-20:21

How do we know that God loves us?

    20:22-20:29

How do we know that the God who created us has a love and compassion and he really cares for us?

    20:29-20:29

    How do we know?

    20:31-20:33

    The cross of Jesus Christ.

    20:34-20:37

How do we know that God is holy, that God is a God of justice?

    20:37-20:41

How do we know that God always upholds his word, always does what he says?

    20:41-20:42

    How do we know that?

    20:44-20:45

    The cross of Jesus Christ.

    20:47-20:49

How does God feel about sin?

    20:51-20:52

How does God feel about our rebellion?

    20:53-20:55

Our thumbing our noses at Him and our rebellion?

    20:56-20:57

How does God feel about our sin?

    20:59-21:00

Where do we get our answer?

    21:00-21:01

    Shout it out.

    21:02-21:05

That was the weakest shout it out I've ever heard.

    21:07-21:09

Come on, you can even hit the Sunday school answer here.

    21:09-21:11

How do we know how God feels about sin?

    21:11-21:12

    Where do we look?

    21:12-21:12

    Tell me.

    21:13-21:14

    The cross!

    21:15-21:16

    That tells us.

    21:18-21:27

You know, I was really hitting this this week hard, thinking, is there anything that's not finding its foundation in the cross?

    21:28-21:29

    I couldn't think of anything.

    21:30-21:33

And somebody's like, well, how about money?

    21:34-21:36

    How about money, Pastor Jeff?

    21:36-21:38

Does the cross speak to money?

    21:39-21:41

    Yeah, it does.

    21:42-21:42

    Why do we give?

    21:43-21:50

Because God is a God who expresses his love through giving and the cross of Jesus Christ tells us why we should be generous givers.

    21:51-21:52

    Read 2 Corinthians chapter eight.

    21:52-21:54

He talks all about that there.

    21:55-21:58

So yes, the cross is a foundation even for giving.

    21:59-22:01

Oh, okay, okay, Pastor Jeff, very slick.

    22:02-22:05

    What about marriage and sexuality?

    22:05-22:07

I bet the cross doesn't talk about that.

    22:09-22:10

    Ooh, you got me.

    22:10-22:11

    No, you didn't.

    22:13-22:14

    Who did Jesus die for?

    22:17-22:17

    His bride.

    22:20-22:24

Jesus died so that he could have a bride that was spotless.

    22:25-22:28

And heaven is described as the marriage supper of the Lamb.

    22:32-22:42

And husbands are to conduct themselves in a home in the pattern of Christ because the purpose of a marriage is to put on a graphic display of the relationship Jesus has with the church.

    22:42-22:47

Husbands represent the self-sacrificing love of Jesus Christ to their wives.

    22:47-22:49

You see how the cross speaks to marriage.

    22:51-22:53

I mean, we could do this all day.

    22:54-23:03

Fight me, fight me, show me something, show me something that the cross of Jesus Christ doesn't cover, doesn't explain.

    23:06-23:09

Paul says, "I wanted to know nothing.

    23:09-23:22

"I decided I'm not gonna know anything "except Christ and Him crucified." Then I gotta tell you, church, it is absolutely baffling to me when I see all these goofy gimmicks that people are doing in churches.

    23:22-23:29

It's absolutely baffling to me when we're dressed up like Indiana Jones or Evil Knievel or Super Mario or whatever.

    23:29-23:31

    It's absolutely baffling to me.

    23:32-23:37

I'm like, do you realize the message that we have in the word of God?

    23:37-23:39

Do you know what this message is?

    23:40-23:44

The message is God spoke everything into existence.

    23:44-23:45

He created us in his image.

    23:45-23:47

    We rebelled against him.

    23:47-23:55

So God in his love came to this earth as a man and demonstrated supernatural abilities, proving who he was.

    23:55-24:02

And then in the ultimate act of love, he sacrificed himself on the cross so that we could be forgiven.

    24:02-24:05

And then they put him in a tomb and he rose from the dead.

    24:07-24:09

And then, oh, and that's not it.

    24:09-24:19

Then he flies to heaven and he's making a place because he's gonna come back and he's gonna take us so that we can be there with him forever in a place that's so glorious.

    24:19-24:23

And like, is there anything better than that?

    24:24-24:27

We have the greatest message in the world.

    24:28-24:33

And somehow we think it needs bling.

    24:36-24:40

We think we need some kind of a gimmick to make Jesus exciting.

    24:41-24:43

    What are you talking about?

    24:46-24:47

    That's Paul's point here.

    24:47-24:55

It's the greatest message, and it always will be in any attempt to put on a show is not gonna enhance the gospel, it's gonna replace the gospel.

    24:58-24:59

You know what I mean by that?

    24:59-25:00

Take our good friend, Indiana Jones.

    25:02-25:09

I hope you weren't in that service, but if you were, could you imagine what people were talking about when they walked out of church that day?

    25:12-25:26

Do you think they walked out of church going, you know, after watching the pastor get around and waving his silly little whip around, do you think people walked out of church going, Jesus Christ is so awesome?

    25:28-25:41

Do you think they walked out of church going, "Oh, how wonderful the salvation of God, that he would so love us." I'll tell you what people said walking out of that church.

    25:42-25:56

They walked out going, "Man, I gotta find my temple of doom, VHS." We've replaced the message of how to be saved from hell with nonsense to entertain people.

    25:58-26:03

Well, at Harvest Bible Chapel, Bible is our middle name.

    26:06-26:10

We are committed to pillar number one, proclaiming the authority of God's word without apology.

    26:13-26:21

Why are we so committed to nothing but expository preaching, representing the word?

    26:21-26:22

Why are we so committed to that?

    26:23-26:26

Like why are you so hard-nosed about that?

    26:26-26:27

I'll give you three reasons why.

    26:28-26:29

    Number one, because it's commanded.

    26:30-26:33

God said this is what we are to talk about, so that's what we're gonna talk about.

    26:34-26:35

    It's commanded.

    26:37-26:42

Second reason that we're so committed to the word of God is it's literally the only thing that's effective.

    26:43-26:47

God said he is watching over his word to perform in Jeremiah 1.

    26:47-26:52

God says Isaiah 55, that his word always accomplishes the purposes for which he sends it out.

    26:53-26:53

    It's effective.

    26:54-27:02

Nothing else will change a person, but the Spirit of God working through the Word of God.

    27:02-27:04

That's it, that's the only way change happens.

    27:05-27:09

There's another reason that we're so committed to the Word of God is because it's unifying.

    27:10-27:18

In John 17, Jesus was praying for us, and Jesus said, "Sanctify them in the truth." Sanctify means set apart.

    27:19-27:26

Jesus said regarding his people, regarding us, We are to be set apart in the truth.

    27:26-27:27

Like, where do we find that?

    27:28-27:29

    Right there, Jesus said it.

    27:30-27:47

As he was praying to his father, he says, "Your word is truth." So Jesus said, "The thing that must unify us, church, "isn't some gimmick or our favorite form of entertainment.

    27:47-27:50

"The thing that must unify us is the word of God.

    27:50-27:52

    get under the word.

    27:53-27:55

That's why we're committed to that.

    27:56-28:01

And you know what I gotta tell you just personally, this is so freeing for me.

    28:03-28:04

    This is so freeing.

    28:06-28:09

I don't have to wonder what to say to you.

    28:11-28:16

See, we don't get in our offices through the week and we're like, "Oh, Pastor Taylor, what do you think we should say this week?

    28:16-28:22

Let's come up with some really great thing gonna really fire people up.

    28:22-28:24

We don't have to do that.

    28:26-28:30

We just have to share the word of God.

    28:31-28:36

It's so free, I don't have to think, how do I top last week's show?

    28:37-28:39

I mean, people were really entertained last week.

    28:39-28:41

    How do I top that?

    28:45-28:47

    It's freeing for you too.

    28:49-28:50

    It's freeing for you.

    28:52-28:53

    And we talk about witnessing.

    28:53-29:03

You know, one of the main obstacles people have about witnessing, I hear this all the time, Pastor Taylor, you've heard it a billion times as well, give or take, but like, you know what people say about witnessing?

    29:04-29:10

They say, "I don't know what to say." I would share my faith, but I'll be honest with you, I don't really know what to say.

    29:10-29:11

    Yes, you do.

    29:11-29:13

You know exactly what to say.

    29:14-29:15

    Like, what do I say?

    29:18-29:23

Try this, try Paul's technique, nothing but the cross.

    29:23-29:23

    How about that?

    29:24-29:25

Nothing but the cross, share that.

    29:26-29:26

Do you know about the cross?

    29:27-29:28

    Share that.

    29:30-29:34

You know, when people come to you and they're like, well, you know, what does the Bible say about politics?

    29:35-29:42

And like Republicans and Democrats, you're like, well, do you know that Jesus Christ died for your sins?

    29:42-29:43

    Did you know that?

    29:44-29:48

And then they're like, well, Well, then what does the Bible say about AI?

    29:49-29:51

I mean, AI's kind of scary.

    29:51-29:53

What does the Bible say about that?

    29:54-30:00

And your response is, do you know that God loved you so much that he sent his son to die on the cross for you?

    30:01-30:02

That's how much God loves you.

    30:05-30:09

And they're like, well, does the Bible say anything about in vitro fertilization?

    30:10-30:12

All I know is that Jesus died for you.

    30:15-30:16

That's all we need to know.

    30:17-30:24

We're not putting on a show because the show will replace God's message of the cross of Christ.

    30:26-30:27

Number two, write this one down.

    30:27-30:30

We're not putting on a show because the show will replace God's methods.

    30:32-30:33

The show will replace God's methods.

    30:34-30:35

Look at verses three and four again.

    30:36-30:52

He says, "And I was with you in weakness and in fear "and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the spirit and of power.

    30:54-31:00

Paul reminds them he didn't come to them like a boxer going to the ring.

    31:01-31:09

Like, "I fired up, yeah!" Like, did you ever see those like, those really goofy like WWE professional wrestlers?

    31:09-31:19

Did you ever see these guys that come to the ring with the fireworks, like, "Yeah!" And Paul's like, "That's not how I came to you." Like some goofy entertainer.

    31:22-31:34

He says, "I came to you," uses three words, "your weakness, fear, and trembling." What do you mean trembling?

    31:34-31:35

What do you mean by that?

    31:36-31:37

Well, you look at how it's used biblically.

    31:37-31:42

Trembling is talking about mental anxiety over an important issue.

    31:42-31:45

It's when you feel something heavy in your heart and mind.

    31:46-31:51

You feel something so heavy that it's like weighing on you.

    31:51-31:53

    And here's what I mean.

    31:53-31:59

Have you ever had the unfortunate business of having to give somebody news you didn't wanna give them?

    32:01-32:04

Unfortunately, in my role, I've had to do that too many times.

    32:05-32:06

And it's so heavy on you.

    32:06-32:22

You're driving to the person's house because you have to tell them face to face that there's been a terrible accident and things don't look good, that heaviness that you have while you're heading there.

    32:22-32:29

Like, delivering the message, just that's what he's talking about.

    32:31-32:47

Or the heaviness, like if you have to confront somebody about their sin, like, It's been brought to my attention that so -and-so is involved in a relationship they shouldn't be involved in.

    32:47-32:48

Now I gotta go talk to them about that.

    32:50-32:53

You see, you don't walk into that like a WWE wrestler, do you?

    32:54-32:56

    Like, "Hey, guess what?

    32:56-32:57

    "I got news for you.

    32:58-33:02

"There's been a terrible tragedy." Like, what's the matter with you?

    33:02-33:06

No, that's the heaviness of having to deliver a serious message.

    33:06-33:08

That's what he's talking about here.

    33:10-33:19

Paul says, "This was my posture when I was with you." Not exactly the celebrity showman that the Corinthians would have preferred.

    33:22-33:33

Paul's saying, "I came in weakness "because I didn't want to put on a show, "because I didn't want to get in God's way." Why, Paul, why?

    33:34-33:36

Because the show will replace God's methods.

    33:38-33:43

You're like, "Well, what is God's method for reaching lost people?

    33:44-33:52

What is God's method?" It's the foolishness of preaching from a weak preacher.

    33:53-33:54

    That's God's method.

    34:00-34:18

Did you ever say something like, "Magnanimous, you have this really idealistic conviction and then the Word of God kind of changes your mind on that?" What I mean is, in past time I've said things like, "Well, you know what?

    34:18-34:19

    The messenger is insignificant.

    34:20-34:30

The message is everything." After my study this week, I'm not so convinced of that anymore.

    34:34-34:38

Yeah, look, we established already that the message cannot be replaced.

    34:38-34:39

    We already talked about that.

    34:40-34:48

But you cannot separate gospel content and gospel communication.

    34:51-35:02

Because according to this, and 117 that we already talked about at the beginning, you can suppress the power of the gospel message if attention is taken away from that and put on the speaker.

    35:06-35:08

And you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on, hang on a second, Pastor Jeff.

    35:08-35:12

Are you telling me that popular people can't be faithful preachers?

    35:14-35:14

    Sure they can.

    35:16-35:22

So long as the spotlight isn't on them, you see.

    35:24-35:26

You're like, well, where's the line?

    35:27-35:27

    Where's the line?

    35:30-35:31

    It's a hard issue.

    35:31-35:36

I'm not sure that we can see the line, but I know that God can.

    35:37-35:44

And I know that there is a difference between preaching Christ and showing off.

    35:45-35:49

And please hear me, you don't need to dress up as Indiana Jones to show off in church.

    35:51-35:54

You can dress like Pastor Taylor.

    36:00-36:02

You know, you really hurt his feelings by laughing just there.

    36:04-36:06

There is nothing wrong with how you're dressed.

    36:10-36:12

    I'm sorry, Pastor Taylor.

    36:15-36:15

    You...

    36:19-36:21

Do you know what this thing is for in a Tic Tac box?

    36:22-36:23

    (congregation laughing)

    36:23-36:25

You put the Tic Tac in there.

    36:26-36:27

    Moving right along.

    36:28-36:32

You don't need to dress up as Indiana Jones to show off.

    36:32-36:41

You can dress like Pastor Taylor, But, unlike Pastor Taylor, you can try to make yourself the star.

    36:42-36:46

Unlike Pastor Taylor, you can put all the attention on yourself.

    36:49-36:52

You know, the message of the cross, you know what the message of the cross is?

    36:52-36:55

It's the message of the cross is about the humiliation of God.

    36:59-37:05

And preaching and witnessing require the humiliation of man.

    37:09-37:14

If you're sitting here today and you're like, well, I'm not really anything special.

    37:14-37:16

I'm just a sinner saved by grace.

    37:16-37:21

Well, if that's your attitude, then that's exactly why God wants to speak through you.

    37:22-37:25

Because you found nothing to boast of in yourself.

    37:26-37:30

And instead, all you can do is exalt Jesus Christ.

    37:32-37:44

The power is in the gospel, which is why it must be preached by someone who isn't going to drown out the gospel message with the sound of tooting their own horn.

    37:46-37:54

So we're not putting on a show because the show will replace God's method of preaching through weak men.

    37:56-37:56

    One more.

    37:58-38:04

We're not putting on a show, number three, because the show will replace God's mission.

    38:05-38:06

    Look at verse five.

    38:11-38:23

He says that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

    38:24-38:26

    So here Paul's landing.

    38:27-38:29

This is the end game, the results.

    38:30-38:38

Here's the bottom line, if you're dazzled by men, your faith is going to be in men.

    38:41-38:54

But if you are dazzled over the power of God, if your experience is with the power of God, then your faith is going to be in God.

    38:57-38:58

    What you win people with.

    39:00-39:02

is what you win them to.

    39:05-39:06

See, we're not putting on a show, why?

    39:06-39:12

Because if we win people with the show, with entertainment, we've won them to entertainment.

    39:12-39:14

And guess why people are going to come to harvest?

    39:14-39:16

    Because they want entertained.

    39:21-39:28

But if we win people with Jesus, We've won them to Jesus.

    39:29-39:34

And people are going to come to harvest because they want to know Jesus.

    39:37-39:39

Putting on a show replaces God's mission.

    39:41-39:48

Instead of making disciples of Jesus, I'm making disciples of me.

    39:54-39:56

There's a very pragmatic problem with that too.

    39:57-40:03

If the church is replacing God's mission for the show, it leaves the converts vulnerable.

    40:04-40:04

    Why?

    40:04-40:06

Because there's always a more impressive performance.

    40:07-40:10

There's always a more charismatic personality out there.

    40:11-40:13

There's always a better show somewhere else.

    40:13-40:17

And that's why, listen, that's why people bounce around churches.

    40:20-40:24

People bounce around churches looking for something more entertaining.

    40:24-40:26

And oh, they're not gonna use the word entertaining.

    40:27-40:32

They want something that is going to be more appealing to them.

    40:39-40:40

We hear it all the time.

    40:40-40:42

Oh, Pastor Jeff, we love Harvest.

    40:42-40:49

We love the people here and we love you, but such and such church has a better playground.

    40:50-40:54

And we got little kids and they need better facilities like that with a playground and stuff.

    40:55-41:03

Or I had one family, said, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, we love Harvest." But he said, my kid, he had a 12 year old kid.

    41:03-41:27

He said, "My kid loves the concert atmosphere at such and such church, so we're going there." I'm like, "First of all, Dad, I seriously doubt the wisdom of leaving the decision of the spiritual direction of the family in the lap of the most immature member of the family, that's a problem.

    41:28-41:29

But is that how we're picking churches?

    41:30-41:31

    Who has the best concert?

    41:34-41:43

You see, if the faith of the responders is produced by the preacher's show, what if the preacher leaves?

    41:44-41:46

What happens when that preacher retires?

    41:47-41:55

"Oh, what are we gonna do now?" Worse, what if the preacher fails?

    42:02-42:05

See, you replace the mission for the show.

    42:08-42:10

Paul says you're missing out on God's power.

    42:12-42:14

God's power, you're like, "Well, what is the power?

    42:15-42:18

"What is the power?" I'm like, "Oh, I know this one.

    42:19-42:22

"I know what the power is, because I've seen this on TV.

    42:23-42:27

"Who's that guy that's, he slaps people and heals them?

    42:28-42:28

    "What's his name, Benny Hill?

    42:30-42:31

    "Hin, Benny Hin.

    42:34-42:34

    "Benny Hill's different.

    42:37-42:47

"I've seen that show, where he slaps the people "and they're down, and then he waves at a group of people and they all fall down.

    42:47-42:49

That's the power of God, right?

    42:54-43:03

Well, back in chapter one, verse 18, Pastor Taylor preached on last week, we learned what the power of God is.

    43:04-43:06

You know what the power of God is?

    43:07-43:08

    The gospel.

    43:10-43:13

The gospel, Romans 1:16, the gospel is the power of God.

    43:16-43:21

You're like, "Well, do we see the power of God at Harvest Bible Chapel?" Yeah.

    43:23-43:36

Every time that we have a baptism service and you have somebody stepping into the tub going, "I turn from my sin and I receive Jesus Christ, I am born again," you are witnessing the power of God.

    43:39-43:47

Every time somebody chooses forgiveness, I was wrong, I was offended, I want to forgive, I want the relationship restored.

    43:47-43:50

Every time that happens, you're seeing the power of God.

    43:52-43:59

Every time somebody uses spiritual gifts to minister to others in the church, you're seeing the power of God.

    43:59-44:04

You see, the power of God is to change life through the power of the Holy Spirit.

    44:05-44:06

    That only comes from Jesus.

    44:07-44:18

and church, we are doing a major disservice to people to replace people experiencing His power with people enjoying my performance.

    44:21-44:24

I have no power at all.

    44:26-44:28

    I can't save anyone.

    44:29-44:32

    I can't change anyone.

    44:34-44:38

Only Jesus Christ can do that through His Spirit.

    44:39-44:48

So we're not putting on a show because the show will replace God's mission of making disciples of Jesus.

    44:52-45:20

The Harvest Bible Chapel, there's no tricks for results here because the gospel just simply points to the bloodied Jesus Christ on the cross there, right there on the cross is your salvation. There on the cross is your example. There on the cross is your victory. There on the cross is your power.

    45:24-45:32

So this is a call for discernment. Look, Are you new here?

    45:33-45:35

You a first time visitor here today?

    45:38-45:41

Have you been bouncing around visiting churches?

    45:41-45:44

And this is just one of many that you've been checking out.

    45:46-45:54

Or maybe you're somebody who's been attending for a while, maybe you're even a member, that's been thinking about moving on.

    45:56-46:01

I just wanna ask you a couple of questions in light of what God says here.

    46:04-46:05

What are you looking for in a church?

    46:09-46:12

Wait, wait, maybe that's not the right question.

    46:14-46:20

Maybe the better question is what should you be looking for in a church?

    46:24-46:24

    More fireworks?

    46:27-46:28

    More pizzazz?

    46:33-46:35

Or is Jesus what you really want?

    46:38-46:42

Are you saying, you know, I want to know the gospel.

    46:42-46:46

I want nothing more than to experience the power of God in my life.

    46:49-46:59

Well, wherever you choose to worship, I would encourage you to make your decision based on the right factors.

    47:03-47:14

I have no say over what other churches do, but I have some say here at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    47:16-47:17

We're not putting on a show.

    47:18-47:21

Beat by your heads as the worship team makes their way back up.

    47:24-47:46

Father in heaven, we bow before you as people who live in a culture bombarded by entertainment, bombarded by churches trying to win people through goofy stuff.

    47:48-47:54

Father, your word is so clear on that in this passage, that your gospel doesn't need help.

    47:55-47:57

    It just needs proclaimed.

    47:59-48:07

Father, I'm sorry for all the times that I thought it was about me.

    48:11-48:26

I'm sorry, God, for all the times that I was trying to factor in some element of creativity or something to really wow people and your gospel doesn't need that.

    48:27-48:37

My efforts will just replace the pure, simple, clear message of the crucified Christ.

    48:38-48:46

Father, I pray for all of us that we would have the discernment that only comes from your Spirit.

    48:49-49:03

That as we are evaluating where we are worshiping and how we are worshiping, we're evaluating the methods that you've laid out in your Word.

    49:03-49:09

We're evaluating the mission that you've laid out in your Word.

    49:09-49:11

We're evaluating the message that you've given us, Father.

    49:14-49:15

    Give us discernment.

    49:17-49:20

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What are some ways you have seen a church make the Gospel into a show / performance?

  3. Why does God prefer to work through weak people instead of strong & talented people (1 Cor 2:3-4)?

  4. How can you tell if a “good preacher” is a real Spirit-filled preacher, or a talented man just using his own gifts?

Boast in the Lord

Introduction:

Why Is Self-Promotion So Foolish (1 Corinthians 1:18–31)

  1. Because it misses the power of THE CROSS. (1 Cor 1:18–25)

  2. Because it misses the strength of a WEAK CHURCH. (1 Cor 1:26–28)

  3. Because it misses the glory of BOASTING IN CHRIST. (1 Cor 1:29–31)

1 Cor 4:7 - “What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?”

    1 Corinthians chapter 1 verses 18 through 31.

    00:55-00:59

    1 Corinthians chapter 1 verses 18 through 31.

    01:00-01:05

As a teenager, I was the last of my friends to create a Facebook account.

    01:06-01:14

For years, I held strong against the peer pressure, but do you wanna know what finally led me to get a Facebook account?

    01:16-01:20

the desire to boast in myself and self-promote.

    01:21-01:30

See, back in the summer of 2009, my family and I went to Hilton Head, South Carolina for vacation, and on that vacation, we went shark fishing.

    01:30-01:34

And during that expedition, I caught a baby hammerhead shark.

    01:36-01:37

    Pretty impressive, right?

    01:38-01:44

My one friend who was on the trip took a picture of me holding up that hammerhead shark, and I thought I looked so cool.

    01:45-01:52

And as soon as I got back to the condo, I fired up Facebook, I created an account, and I made that picture my profile picture.

    01:54-02:02

I'm not gonna show that picture on the screens because I don't wanna selflessly promote myself yet again, although I already see Jamie Kendrew looking up Facebook right now.

    02:03-02:08

And I'm sure that many of you will do the same after service, so happy hunting, trying to find that picture.

    02:09-02:16

But I went back and looked at this cringey 16-year-old post to see how many likes and comments it received.

    02:17-02:19

How many likes do you think that picture got?

    02:21-02:21

    100?

    02:22-02:24

Wow, Jeff, you have a lot of confidence in me.

    02:25-02:25

    Six.

    02:27-02:27

    (audience laughing)

    02:28-02:29

    Talk about going viral.

    02:30-02:33

I think I might have missed my calling as a social media influencer.

    02:34-02:39

But as I was looking at this old post, I also saw the comment of my friend who took that picture.

    02:40-02:41

He wrote this on the post.

    02:42-02:46

I'm just gonna point out that this picture is the only reason you even got a Facebook.

    02:46-02:48

You just wanted the world to know about the shark.

    02:50-02:55

My friend saw right through my motivations and he knew why I created that account.

    02:57-02:58

    Self-promotion.

    02:59-03:03

But I'm not the only one who has utilized social media for self-promotion, right?

    03:03-03:11

That's the main drive for most people who have an Instagram, a Facebook, or a talk tix as Pastor Jeff often calls it.

    03:12-03:15

On social media, you put your best foot forward.

    03:15-03:26

You curate an image of yourself that isn't exactly accurate or realistic, but you don't really care because that's how you want other people to view you.

    03:28-03:34

This past week, I did a deep dive into self-promotion, and I came across a lot of interesting content.

    03:35-03:43

I came across really buff dudes who lectured not so buff dudes about the importance of being a perfect physical specimen.

    03:44-03:49

The art of destroying the competition and manifesting your dreams into reality.

    03:50-03:59

I also came across inspirational coaches who pamper with self-help talk, like whenever you succeed, tell yourself, I'm so proud of myself.

    04:00-04:02

    I'm my own personal hero.

    04:03-04:04

Or I saw this one last week.

    04:05-04:08

I'm becoming a person that the younger version of me would have looked up to.

    04:09-04:11

Oh, gag, that was really hard to hear.

    04:13-04:18

Here's one quote that I haven't been able to stop thinking about as soon as I read it.

    04:18-04:22

If you don't promote yourself, nobody will.

    04:24-04:26

Do you wanna know what I thought when I read that?

    04:27-04:28

    That's exactly right.

    04:29-04:35

If you don't promote yourself, nobody will because they are too busy promoting themselves.

    04:36-04:39

We live in such a me-centered society.

    04:39-04:44

Focus on me, pay attention to me, because I'm so special and unique.

    04:45-04:48

Don't be unfair to me, don't tell me what to do.

    04:51-04:55

Listen, self-promotion isn't just a problem out there.

    04:56-05:00

Self-promotion is a problem in here that we need to deal with.

    05:02-05:09

And don't think to yourself, you know what, Pastor Taylor, you're right, there's a lot of prideful people in this room and I'll do my part in calling them out, don't worry.

    05:12-05:12

    Well, hold on a minute.

    05:13-05:23

Self-promotion isn't just a problem out there and in here, vaguely and generally, self-promotion is a problem within you that you need to deal with.

    05:25-05:30

Self-promotion is a problem within me that I need to deal with.

    05:32-05:38

This is the third week in a year-long study of First Corinthians, church unified and purified.

    05:39-05:50

Last week, Pastor Jeff challenged you to protect the unity of the church by nixing the cliques and refusing to divide over pointless preferences and particular personalities.

    05:52-06:03

This morning, you will be challenged to protect the unity of the church by resisting the temptation to pridefully promote yourself and elevate your importance.

    06:05-06:08

Because obsessing over me hurts the we.

    06:09-06:12

    It hurts everyone around you.

    06:13-06:17

And self-promotion isn't just a new problem that started with the internet.

    06:18-06:21

It is an ancient problem that the Corinthians had to deal with as well.

    06:22-06:29

And this ancient problem can only be solved with the timeless truths of God's word.

    06:30-06:39

And you cannot deal with the prideful promotion within your own heart until you realize how destructive and foolish it really is.

    06:41-06:45

So I want us to ask and answer one question this morning, just one.

    06:46-06:49

    Why is self-promotion so foolish?

    06:51-06:54

    Why is self-promotion so foolish?

    06:56-06:58

Before we seek to answer that question, let's go to the Lord and ask for His help.

    07:00-07:07

Please pray for me, that I will faithfully proclaim God's word, as I pray for you, that you will faithfully receive it.

    07:13-07:19

Father, we come to you and we admit our temptation to self-glorify, to self-promote.

    07:19-07:22

Lord, I admit to you that I have been dealing with that this morning already.

    07:24-07:34

Father, I pray that we wouldn't push aside the conviction that your spirit brings, that we wouldn't think, oh, this sermon's for somebody else, Lord, help every single person in this room to think, no, this is for me.

    07:35-07:36

This is God's word for me.

    07:38-07:42

And may we walk out of here different people with a different attitude and a different focus.

    07:43-07:46

We ask all this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, amen.

    07:48-07:50

So why is self-promotion so foolish?

    07:51-07:55

Reason number one, because it misses the power of the cross.

    07:56-08:00

Because it misses the power of the cross.

    08:03-08:11

Last week's text ended with the cross, and this morning's passage begins with the cross.

    08:12-08:15

    Let's read 1 Corinthians 1, verse 18 together.

    08:16-08:32

The apostle Paul writes, "For the word of the cross is folly "to those who are perishing, "but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God." According to Paul, there are only two ways to view the cross.

    08:32-08:43

There are only two ways to view the news of Jesus Christ, God himself who came to suffer and die to save anyone and everyone who believes in him.

    08:44-08:47

There are only two ways to view the gospel.

    08:48-08:51

    Foolish or powerful?

    08:52-08:53

Those are the only two options.

    08:54-08:57

There is no riding the fence, there is no middle ground.

    08:57-09:05

You either hear the gospel and think, that is so dumb, or you think, that is so awesome.

    09:07-09:09

Which is your view of the cross?

    09:11-09:12

    Foolish or powerful?

    09:13-09:15

    Dumb or awesome?

    09:17-09:21

Your view of the cross isn't a minor footnote in the story of your life.

    09:22-09:26

Your view of the cross isn't a small aspect of your worldview.

    09:26-09:29

No, it is the defining characteristic of who you are.

    09:31-09:38

Your view of the cross reveals where you stand right now and where you will end up in eternity.

    09:41-09:49

If you reject the cross of Christ in this life, you will be rejected by Christ when you exit this life.

    09:51-09:57

But if you have embraced the cross of Christ, Paul says you are being saved.

    09:59-10:01

Does that sound kind of weird to you, being saved?

    10:02-10:05

We usually just talk about salvation in the past tense, right?

    10:06-10:14

But scripture talks about salvation in three tenses, the past, the present, and the future.

    10:14-10:18

If you have trusted in Christ, you have experienced salvation.

    10:19-10:23

You are experiencing salvation and you will experience salvation.

    10:24-10:30

You have been justified, you are being sanctified, and you will be glorified.

    10:31-10:34

You were made right by the blood of Christ before the presence of God.

    10:34-10:37

You are being made more and more into the image of Christ.

    10:38-10:42

And one day you'll be fully perfect in the presence of Christ.

    10:43-10:49

The cross has the transformative power to change your past, your present, and your future.

    10:51-10:58

But you can only experience the power of the cross if you humble yourself before it.

    11:00-11:05

You will not experience the power of the cross if you live to promote yourself.

    11:07-11:12

You will not experience the power of the cross if you think you're wiser than God.

    11:13-11:28

"You will not experience the power of the cross "if you think you can save yourself "and figure out the meaning of life on your own." Paul talks about the foolishness of trusting in your own wisdom in verses 19 through 20.

    11:30-11:39

For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise "and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart." Where is the one who is wise?

    11:39-11:40

    Where is the scribe?

    11:41-11:42

Where is the debater of this age?

    11:43-11:46

Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

    11:48-12:01

So Paul quotes Isaiah 29, 14, then throws down the gauntlet to challenge all the great thinkers of his day, the philosophers, the teachers of the Old Testament law, and the polished public speakers.

    12:02-12:18

If Paul was speaking directly at 2025, he'd be talking about the most celebrated politicians, enlightened spiritual gurus, and the most influential influencers on social media who get way more than six likes on their posts.

    12:19-12:21

Paul is saying, you think you're so clever?

    12:21-12:24

Fine, try to step up and impress God.

    12:24-12:26

Try to beat him in a debate.

    12:26-12:27

    Let's see how that goes.

    12:28-12:31

Spoiler alert, he's gonna wipe the floor with you.

    12:31-12:33

So who's up next to challenge him?

    12:35-12:41

As I read this verse this past week, I thought back to playing board games with my dad growing up.

    12:43-12:49

You know how some parents let you win or make the concession to go easy on you?

    12:49-12:51

That wasn't my dad's strategy, right dad?

    12:53-12:56

Every time he played a game, he would just demolish me.

    12:58-13:07

And sorry, monopoly, clue, he might have a different opinion but for some reason, no loss hurt quite as bad as risk.

    13:08-13:14

When I was six, seven, some of you get that, some of you don't.

    13:16-13:20

When I was six, seven, I kept thinking that my day of victory had finally come.

    13:20-13:26

The day had finally arrived when I thought I was wiser than my dad, I was smarter than my dad.

    13:26-13:28

I could beat him at a game of risk.

    13:29-13:35

And time and time again, I would make a foolish move towards the end of the game.

    13:36-13:39

my dad would ask the question that I could still hear in my mind right now.

    13:40-13:56

"Son, you sure you wanna do that?" And sure enough, I did, and then my dad would totally destroy my wisdom and thwart my discernment every single time we got out the wristboard.

    13:57-14:04

And God does the same exact thing to everyone who opposes him on the wristboard of life.

    14:06-14:24

Every single time we put forth a new religion, a new philosophy, a new ideology, I just imagine God asking, "Are you sure you wanna do that?" And sure enough, we do, and then sure enough, God totally destroys our wisdom and thwarts our discernment.

    14:26-14:32

And Paul goes into even greater detail about why and how God does this in verses 21 through 25.

    14:33-14:42

"For since in the wisdom of God, The world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe.

    14:43-14:59

For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God.

    14:59-15:06

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

    15:07-15:18

It gives God great joy, great pleasure to expose the so-called wisdom of the world by saving sinners in a seemingly foolish way.

    15:19-15:21

The brutal death of his son.

    15:23-15:36

You know, we lose sight of how foolish the cross would have seemed to Jews and Gentiles alike 2,000 years ago, because we see crosses everywhere, don't we, on t-shirts, bumper stickers, on church steeples.

    15:37-15:43

Let me ask you, when was the last time you saw someone wearing a t-shirt with the graphic of a gas chamber on it?

    15:45-15:50

When was the last time you saw someone wearing a lethal injection or electric chair necklace?

    15:53-15:57

These are serious symbols of death and capital punishment.

    15:57-16:01

Wearing something like that in public would be so off-putting and reprehensible, right?

    16:03-16:09

Well, now you understand why so many Jews and Gentiles were totally put off by the cross 2,000 years ago.

    16:10-16:17

Back in Jesus' day, criminals weren't put to death by a firing squad, an electric chair, lethal injection.

    16:18-16:24

No, the Romans would nail them to a wooden cross and leave them to asphyxiate to death.

    16:27-16:35

for the unbelieving Jews, the cross was a stumbling block because a crucified Messiah was an oxymoron.

    16:35-16:42

It was like saying that someone is a brilliant idiot, a murderous humanitarian, or a lying truth teller.

    16:43-16:48

Those words don't naturally belong together in describing the same person.

    16:50-16:55

Under the Old Testament law, being hung on a tree was a sign of divine curse.

    16:55-16:58

It was a sign that you were being punished by God himself.

    16:59-17:05

So to the Jews, how could the Messiah, the chosen one, be punished and cursed by God?

    17:05-17:06

    That seemed insane.

    17:06-17:08

    It was beyond belief.

    17:11-17:18

And for the Gentiles, the philosophical Greeks, the cross was folly, from which we get our word moronic.

    17:20-17:23

To them, the cross was stupid.

    17:25-17:33

Why would the creator of everything lower himself enough to die a death that was reserved for the worst criminals?

    17:35-17:42

But for the believing Jew, for the believing Gentile, Christ crucified isn't a stumbling block or moronic.

    17:43-17:55

To those who accept the divine call, Christ crucified is the power of God and the wisdom of God, for the foolishness of God is wiser than men and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

    17:57-18:04

Your own way of thinking may seem wise to you, but I can assure you it is foolish.

    18:06-18:14

God's method of salvation may seem foolish, but it is infinitely wise than anything you could possibly brainstorm.

    18:15-18:22

Your I got this on my own attitude may seem strong to you, but it is nothing but worldly weakness.

    18:24-18:36

Christ dying on the cross may make him seem weak, but that was the strongest act of love we could possibly imagine, totally stronger than anything you could ever hope to accomplish.

    18:38-18:44

The wisest one who created all things chose to hang on that cross all those years ago.

    18:46-18:54

The strongest one who will uphold this universe the word of his power chose to take the full wrath of his father.

    18:55-19:03

The source of life chose to lay down his own life so that you could live forever and ever.

    19:05-19:14

So if you have not yet trusted in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, I want you to look at me and act like your life depends on what I'm about to say because it does.

    19:17-19:22

You do not have the power in and of yourself to please God.

    19:24-19:24

    You don't.

    19:26-19:31

You do not have the power to rid yourself of the guilt and shame that you feel deep down.

    19:32-19:34

And you know exactly what I'm talking about.

    19:34-19:38

Those feelings of regret and conviction that you feel.

    19:40-19:45

Those oppressive thoughts about your past mistakes that you can't seem to let go of.

    19:47-19:53

You do not have the power to erase the stain of sin off of your soul.

    19:55-20:01

You don't have the power to pull yourself up by your own bootstraps and save yourself.

    20:02-20:07

You do not have any wisdom or power of your own.

    20:09-20:16

For the very first time, look to the only source of heavenly wisdom and power, the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ.

    20:17-20:19

If you submit to him, he will save you.

    20:20-20:22

He will forgive you if you ask him to.

    20:22-20:25

Christ will have you if you will have him.

    20:28-20:30

    Why is self-promotion so foolish?

    20:31-20:33

Because it misses the power of the cross.

    20:34-20:38

Second reason, because it misses the strength of a weak church.

    20:39-20:42

Because it misses the strength of a weak church.

    20:45-20:48

Does the wording of that point seem somewhat strange to you?

    20:49-20:50

    Does that seem disrespectful?

    20:50-20:53

Taylor, do you really think the church is weak?

    20:55-20:56

    Yeah, I do.

    20:57-20:58

    And that's its greatest strength.

    21:00-21:04

If you don't believe me, believe Paul because he says the same exact thing in verses 26 to 28.

    21:05-21:07

    For consider your calling, brothers.

    21:08-21:10

Not many of you are wise according to worldly standards.

    21:10-21:12

    Not many were powerful.

    21:12-21:18

Not many were of noble birth, but God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.

    21:19-21:22

God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.

    21:22-21:30

God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are.

    21:33-21:38

We just saw that God chose himself wise to the foolishness of the cross.

    21:39-21:44

Now we see that God shows himself strong through the weakness of his people.

    21:46-21:54

Travel back in time with me to recess whenever those teams were picked for dodgeball, kickball, basketball, pick your sport.

    21:55-21:56

Was that nerve-wracking for any of you?

    21:58-22:00

And some of you are like, no, actually it was a lot of fun.

    22:00-22:01

    It wasn't nerve-wracking at all.

    22:01-22:03

That's because you were the ringers who were chosen first.

    22:04-22:05

Must have been nice to be you.

    22:06-22:09

The rest of us were in the middle of the pack your chosen dead last.

    22:12-22:17

Why and how are kids chosen in a pickup game of recess?

    22:18-22:23

There are two qualifiers, skill and popularity.

    22:24-22:27

The best of the best and the coolest of the cool are snatched up first.

    22:29-22:31

Is that how it works in the family of God?

    22:33-22:38

Does God jump at recruiting the best of the best and the coolest of the cool?

    22:39-22:42

No, it's actually the exact opposite.

    22:43-22:48

Paul calls the Corinthians to consider who they were and where they came from.

    22:49-22:54

Not many of them were brainiac philosophers, influential leaders, and rich aristocrats.

    22:55-23:00

No, in the eyes of the world, they were stupid, worthless, obscure, and poor.

    23:00-23:02

    But none of that matters.

    23:03-23:09

They may have been chosen last in a game of kickball, but they were chosen by God himself.

    23:10-23:15

And if God chooses you, you are no longer defined by who rejects you.

    23:19-23:26

And the pages of the Old Testament and the New Testament are filled with examples of God choosing the weak and the most unexpected.

    23:28-23:37

God chose Abraham to father a son and jumpstart the people of Israel when he was as good as dead, as the author of Hebrews lovingly describes him.

    23:39-23:45

God chose Jacob over Esau, even though Jacob was a slimy liar.

    23:47-23:55

God chose Moses to deliver the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt, even though Moses was a stuttering murderer.

    23:56-24:04

God chose Gideon to defeat the invading Midianites, even though Gideon was hiding from the Midianites when he was called by the angel.

    24:06-24:12

God chose 12 ordinary men to be the followers of Christ.

    24:13-24:17

These men had ordinary and even hateful jobs.

    24:19-24:25

The apostle Paul started as a religious Pharisees who held the coats of the men who stoned Stephen.

    24:27-24:28

    Why does God do this?

    24:29-24:32

Why is this God's recruiting strategy?

    24:33-24:36

Well, Paul tells us why in verses 27 through 28.

    24:36-24:37

    Let's read those verses again.

    24:38-24:41

But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise.

    24:42-24:45

God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.

    24:45-24:53

God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are.

    24:55-24:57

That is so counterintuitive, isn't it?

    24:58-25:01

That's so different than what we would do if we were God.

    25:02-25:10

Worldly reasoning dictates that the church should recruit the most famous athletes, the most polished politicians.

    25:12-25:17

You ever heard someone say, "Man, that person would make a great Christian." Wouldn't everybody make a great Christian?

    25:18-25:28

Or, "Man, so many people would get saved "if that person got saved." That view promotes human wisdom, not God's wisdom.

    25:29-25:33

That view promotes human strength, not God's strength.

    25:34-25:39

That view acts like God's up in heaven looking over his draft picks like, man, I made a lot of mistakes in the first few rounds.

    25:40-25:44

I need some more stars to round out my roster and boost my stats.

    25:44-25:46

No, God is not like you and me.

    25:46-25:49

God does not think like you and me.

    25:50-25:57

If God needed the biggest somebodies of this world, then he would not be somebody worthy of your devotion and worship.

    25:58-26:03

God wants to use nobodies to show that he needs nobody.

    26:05-26:10

God wants to use the most unexpected to bring himself the most glory.

    26:12-26:18

God wants to use the weak to expose those who think they're strong apart from Christ.

    26:21-26:30

And I personally believe that's why the Lord called me to be a preacher of his word and to be a pastor, because I was the most unexpected choice.

    26:32-26:35

As a kid, I was terrified to talk in front of people.

    26:36-26:40

I had a stuttering problem, which I still have to deal with at some level to this day.

    26:42-26:46

No one looked at the teenage Taylor and thought, man, get that guy behind a pulpit ASAP.

    26:46-26:48

    He is so charismatic.

    26:48-26:49

    He is so magnetic.

    26:49-26:52

He is a shoe-in for ministry.

    26:54-27:00

God chose me to be a messenger of the word to show that all the glory belongs to him and not to me.

    27:01-27:05

If God can use me for his kingdom, then he can use anybody.

    27:06-27:12

If God can use someone like me, I guarantee he can use someone like you.

    27:15-27:17

Do you feel inadequate to follow Jesus?

    27:20-27:24

Do you feel insufficient for the task that he has given to you?

    27:26-27:29

Do you feel unqualified for ministry?

    27:31-27:34

If you feel that way, then you're the perfect man or woman for the job.

    27:35-27:36

    Congratulations, you're hired.

    27:38-27:43

Thinking that you're unqualified for ministry makes you qualified for ministry.

    27:45-27:52

On the other hand, believing that you're qualified for ministry makes you unqualified for ministry.

    27:54-27:59

If you think you're strong, you're going to depend on no one else besides yourself.

    27:59-28:06

If you think you're strong, I have to warn you, you're not gonna like the mission and priorities of this church.

    28:07-28:10

We are not interested in teaching self-help nonsense.

    28:11-28:14

We are not interested in puffing up your ego.

    28:15-28:25

We're not interested in making you a self-reliant person, but we are in the business of training you to be a weak servant of Christ who recognizes your weakness.

    28:27-28:30

Are you willing to get on board with that mission?

    28:31-28:34

Are you willing to have those priorities?

    28:36-28:37

    Stop promoting your strength.

    28:39-28:41

    Stop trying to impress people.

    28:42-28:45

Begin to find comfort in your weakness.

    28:47-28:49

Stop putting others down so you can feel better about yourself.

    28:50-28:56

Stop thinking, well, this church can never survive without me, this church can survive without any of us.

    28:57-29:00

Stop thinking, I'm the MVP on God's team.

    29:01-29:04

Stop thinking that your opinions and preferences are the most important.

    29:06-29:10

Begin to focus on the we instead of me.

    29:12-29:14

    Why is self-promotion so foolish?

    29:16-29:17

Because it misses the power of the cross.

    29:18-29:20

Because it misses the strength of a weak church.

    29:21-29:26

And finally, because it misses the glory of boasting in Christ.

    29:28-29:31

Because it misses the glory of boasting in Christ.

    29:33-29:41

In verses 29 through 30, Paul continues to offer Another explanation for why God fills his church with weak people.

    29:42-29:47

Paul writes that no human being might boast in the presence of God.

    29:48-29:57

And because of him, because of God, you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.

    29:59-30:02

Self-promotion doesn't just hurt other people.

    30:03-30:07

    Most importantly, self-promotion offends God.

    30:07-30:12

When you boast before other people, you are actually boasting before God.

    30:13-30:21

It's a very bad plan to brag about yourself in the presence of the most important person in all of existence.

    30:23-30:26

You know, boasting in yourself is kind of lame, right?

    30:28-30:30

Do you know what makes boasting in yourself even lamer?

    30:32-30:35

boasting about something that you didn't even earn in the first place.

    30:36-30:40

Imagine with me that next week I drive up in a brand new Lamborghini.

    30:40-30:43

I don't really know what the cool cars are now, so I just said Lamborghini, all right?

    30:43-30:46

So just fill in the blanks, whatever car you want it to be, I guess.

    30:46-31:00

I park the car, the door slides open, and I step out with cool sunglasses, driving gloves, a cool leather jacket, and I'm like swinging my keys around, that you'll say something about my car.

    31:02-31:06

And as soon as you say, "Pastor Taylor, that's a nice ride," I jump on the opportunity to bask in your glory.

    31:07-31:10

Yep, I've wanted a car like this for 35 years and it's finally mine.

    31:10-31:13

I mean, sure, it costs a fortune, but why not treat yourself?

    31:14-31:15

Why not enjoy the fruits of your labor?

    31:16-31:23

And then I proudly saunter away, and you come across my dad in the lobby, and you say, "Man, Taylor has such a nice new car.

    31:23-31:32

"He must have worked so hard to be able to afford that." And my dad looks at you with shock in his eyes and he says, "What are you talking about?

    31:32-31:40

"I bought him that car." Doesn't that piece of information kind of change what I presented to you?

    31:41-31:45

Doesn't it make my ridiculous outfit and my prideful speech seem even worse to you?

    31:47-31:47

    But why?

    31:49-31:53

Because you can't really boast about something that you received free of charge.

    31:54-31:56

And that's what Paul is saying in these verses.

    31:56-32:04

If you are a born again believer, you are in Christ because of the undeserved grace of God, period, no other reason.

    32:05-32:07

You did nothing to earn it.

    32:08-32:14

You have received all that Christ has, and you have received all of who Christ is.

    32:15-32:18

    You have been given everything.

    32:20-32:21

You have received so much from him.

    32:25-32:29

Listen to what Paul has to say about this in a few chapters from now, in chapter four, verse seven.

    32:30-32:33

What do you have that you did not receive?

    32:34-32:40

If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?

    32:40-32:47

You have received grace, you have received salvation, why would you boast like you didn't receive it and like you earned it?

    32:50-32:51

Look again at chapter one, verse 30.

    32:53-33:01

And because of him, because of God, you were in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.

    33:03-33:08

This first presents so many important truths that you cannot forget if you're a true Christian.

    33:09-33:11

You are not wise all by your lonesome.

    33:13-33:16

You were not born with a sense of righteousness.

    33:17-33:21

You cannot be sanctified, set apart, and made holy by your own efforts.

    33:21-33:23

    You cannot redeem yourself.

    33:23-33:35

You could not purchase yourself from slavery to Satan, sin, and death, but according to Paul, someone came to this earth to be your source of wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

    33:35-33:37

    Who is that one person?

    33:38-33:39

    Jesus Christ.

    33:40-33:45

In Christ, your foolish thinking has been replaced with the very wisdom of God.

    33:46-33:53

In Christ, your gross unrighteousness has been exchanged for Christ's perfect righteousness.

    33:54-34:02

In Christ, your slavery to sin has been ended so that you can belong to the kindest master imaginable.

    34:03-34:10

In Christ, your godly immaturity has been put aside so that you can finally pursue after godly maturity.

    34:12-34:21

All of these things are a gift from God, so do not take an ounce of credit for a single gift that he has given to you.

    34:24-34:27

So what should you do instead of taking the credit and boasting in yourself?

    34:28-34:33

Well, Paul makes it very simple by referencing the prophet Jeremiah in verse 31.

    34:33-34:46

He says, "So that as it is written, "let the one who boasts, boasts in the Lord." You are to replace self-promotion with Christ-promotion.

    34:47-34:49

    What is Christ's promotion?

    34:50-34:58

Christ's promotion is being on the lookout for opportunities to appoint every single person in your life to the person and work of the Lord Jesus.

    34:59-35:05

Because everyone in your life needs what Jesus has to offer Christians and non-Christians alike.

    35:06-35:08

Even those people you don't like very much.

    35:09-35:15

Christ's promotion is redirecting all the praise that you receive to him because he alone deserves it.

    35:16-35:22

Christ promotion looks like being freed from the horrible hobby of trying to fish for other people's compliments.

    35:24-35:30

Your meaning no longer hinges on how your boss and your coworkers evaluate your performance.

    35:33-35:41

Your identity no longer hangs on what your neighbor thinks about your house, your car, or your lawn.

    35:42-35:45

Guys in the room, nobody really cares besides you.

    35:48-35:53

Moms, your meaning no longer depends on what other moms think about your kids.

    35:55-35:58

You no longer exist to impress people.

    35:59-36:04

Life is no longer about you and your boasting is no longer about you.

    36:05-36:08

Because here's the hidden secret according to Paul and Jeremiah.

    36:10-36:10

    You're gonna boast.

    36:11-36:12

    It's gonna happen.

    36:13-36:19

It's not a question of will you boast, it's a question of who will you boast in.

    36:21-36:26

I have a nine-year-old golden retriever named Murdoch and he's still a puppy at heart.

    36:27-36:33

One minute he'll be sleeping on the couch and then he'll be running zoomies around the house.

    36:34-36:35

Do you all know what zoomies are?

    36:35-36:36

    I'm gonna explain that.

    36:36-36:41

It's when dogs run like they're in the Kentucky Derby, running in circles around the house.

    36:42-36:48

In those moments, I don't try to make Murdoch stop running Zoomies, because he's gonna get his energy out in some way.

    36:48-36:53

Instead, I open the front door and say, if you're gonna run Zoomies, at least run them outside.

    36:55-36:58

That's what Paul is saying in these verses.

    37:00-37:04

He's saying, if you're going to boast, boast in the Lord.

    37:05-37:14

My dog's crazy playing belongs in the right setting, Outside, your bragging, your boasting, belongs in the right setting as well.

    37:15-37:18

The person and work of Jesus Christ.

    37:21-37:23

So what's the big takeaway from this passage?

    37:24-37:25

What's the big takeaway from this sermon?

    37:26-37:29

I want you to brag as much as you possibly can.

    37:30-37:32

I want you to boast until you're blue in the face.

    37:32-37:35

I want you to promote from sun up to sun down.

    37:37-37:39

You've probably never heard a pastor tell you that before.

    37:41-37:45

But never forget this really important detail.

    37:45-37:48

You cannot be the focus of your promotion.

    37:49-37:53

You cannot be the focus of your bragging and your boasting.

    37:53-37:58

If you're the focus of your promotion, you'll miss the power of the cross of Christ.

    37:59-38:02

You'll miss the strength of being weak in Christ.

    38:02-38:06

You'll miss the glory of boasting in Christ.

    38:08-38:14

If you promote Christ and not yourself, you'll find yourself becoming more like him.

    38:15-38:20

If you promote Christ and not yourself, the church will be strengthened.

    38:21-38:30

If you promote Christ and not yourself, you'll begin to feel that burden of being the center of existence lift off your shoulders 'cause you were never meant to bear that.

    38:32-38:38

If you promote in Christ, you'll feel stupider, but you'll be wisest in the most important way.

    38:40-38:45

If you promote Christ, you'll feel weaker, but you'll actually be stronger.

    38:47-38:49

The worship team can make their way forward.

    38:51-38:54

You know, boasting in the Lord all by yourself is great.

    38:55-38:58

You can boast in the Lord during your personal quiet time.

    38:59-39:00

But you know what's even better?

    39:01-39:05

When others join in and boast in the Lord with you.

    39:05-39:12

Singing as a body of believers is a biblically commanded way to boast in the Lord.

    39:12-39:19

As we sing, our unity is on full display in a physical and tangible way.

    39:20-39:26

When we sing, our voices come together to form a corporate praise.

    39:27-39:33

Our voices come together to promote the one who has given us all that we have.

    39:35-39:45

When God's people lay aside all distractions in fear of embarrassment to sing, it's made clear that we boast in Christ and not ourselves.

    39:47-39:49

And I know what some of you are thinking, but Pastor Taylor, I don't like to sing.

    39:50-39:52

Well, too bad, because God wants you to sing.

    39:53-39:53

    So we're gonna do that.

    39:55-39:58

So let's stand and sing to the one who deserves our praises.

    39:58-40:05

Please stand and give all of your passion to promoting God's strength, His wisdom, and His power.

Introduction:

Philippians 2:3-7 – Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

3 Reasons I Want to Fight for Unity (1 Corinthians 1:10-17)

  1. Because I Am RESPONSIBLE for the Church's REPUTATION. (1 Cor 1:11)

John 13:35 – By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

John 17:20–21 – I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

  2. Because FIGHTING is FOOLISH. (1 Cor 1:12–13)

  3. Because DISUNITY DISTRACTS from the Mission. (1 Cor 1:14–17)

  • 00:51-00:57

Open up those Bibles to 1 Corinthians 1.

    00:59-01:10

But as we turn to God's word, I'm going to ask, we just pause for a second and then please pray for me to faithfully communicate what God has said in his word.

    01:11-01:17

And I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive what it is that the Lord wants to teach us from his word today.

    01:17-01:18

    All right, let's pray.

    01:22-01:51

Father, just now returning to Your Word, I pray that our minds and hearts would be just so focused on what you said, and that we are eager to obey what it is you've laid out for us in your word.

    01:53-01:54

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    01:55-01:58

And all of God's people said, amen.

    01:59-02:01

    1 Corinthians chapter one.

    02:01-02:08

You know, every so often at Harvest Bible Chapel, we do a Q&A day where we take questions from the congregation and answer them.

    02:08-02:16

And I think it was the last Q&A day, we had a very, a question that kind of threw me for a loop.

    02:16-02:22

I was wondering who asked it and why, but the question was, do the leaders of the church like each other?

    02:27-02:40

Well, you know, we're working on seeking the Lord on building a church building on a piece of property up in New Swickley.

    02:42-02:53

And there is wind of opposition to building, which probably means building is of the Lord because that's what happens, right?

    02:53-02:54

    Read the book of Nehemiah.

    02:58-03:21

But in our staff meeting in my office around the conference tables, we were in a staff meeting and our children's director, Missy Howells, I got permission to tell this story by the way, but our children's director was telling us about one of the individuals who is sort of against us building a building on that property.

    03:23-03:29

And then Missy capped off her update by turning to Pastor Rich.

    03:30-03:58

And she said, "Yeah, she's really going after you people." And I said, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, you people." I said, "Well, at what point, Melissa, did you go from staff member of the biggest demographic of our church to now it's you people?" And we have been laughing about that ever since.

    03:58-04:02

And if you know Missy, it's even funnier.

    04:04-04:13

But how quickly some people actually seriously detach themselves from the church?

    04:15-04:28

How quickly people detach themselves and they don't see themselves as part of the body, don't see themselves as wanting what's actually best for the body as a whole.

    04:30-04:36

How many people, show of hands, have ever been involved in a church where there's been fighting?

    04:37-04:38

    Raise your hand.

    04:39-04:39

    Alright.

    04:40-04:45

How many people have ever been involved in a church where there was a split?

    04:45-04:46

    Raise your hand.

    04:47-04:48

    Way too many of you.

    04:49-04:51

    Alright. Way too many.

    04:54-04:57

    Listen, it's nothing new.

    05:00-05:05

It's been happening from the very beginning of the church.

    05:05-05:17

And it just seems common now because there's more churches and there's easier ways to communicate in our day, but it happens.

    05:17-05:25

Fighting and divisions in the church is, unfortunately, one of the sins that the church has been dealing with since day one.

    05:28-05:37

And last week as we started 1 Corinthians, the Apostle Paul told the Corinthian church, look, the foundation for unity has to be in knowing your salvation.

    05:39-05:40

That has to be the foundation.

    05:40-05:45

You have to know the grace of God by which you're saved.

    05:45-05:48

You have to know that He has gifted you to serve.

    05:48-05:51

You have to know that you are guiltless in the day of Christ Jesus.

    05:51-05:52

    He will sustain you.

    05:53-05:54

And that's how Paul starts the letter.

    05:54-05:57

He says, "This is who you are in Jesus Christ.

    05:58-06:05

Now act like it." And that's the theme of the whole book of 1 Corinthians.

    06:08-06:12

You know, the Corinthian church, they had a lot of problems.

    06:12-06:13

    Have you read this book?

    06:13-06:15

They had a lot of problems.

    06:17-06:32

They had a lot of problems concerning sexuality, and marriage, and liberty, and worship, and spiritual gifts, and the resurrection of Jesus, and money, and...

    06:32-06:41

Paul wrote this book, he wrote them this letter to correct their sinful problems.

    06:42-06:58

But you know, Paul must have thought that their biggest problem was disunity, the fighting, because this is what he addresses first in the letter.

    07:00-07:01

    Look at verse 10.

    07:03-07:09

And really, like, verse 10 could have been like the only thing he wrote in the whole book.

    07:11-07:12

    the point.

    07:13-07:34

He says, "I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

    07:37-07:50

Now verse 10 obviously flows from verse 9, and verse 9, he tells the church that they, by extension we, are called into the fellowship of his Son.

    07:52-07:57

That's a foundation here for the Corinthian church and for Harvest Bible Chapel.

    07:57-07:58

    This is not my church.

    08:00-08:01

This is not Pastor Taylor's church.

    08:05-08:08

Corinth was not Paul's church or Apollos' church.

    08:10-08:14

Harvest Bible Chapel, it's not your church.

    08:15-08:16

    Whose church is it?

    08:18-08:18

    It's God's church.

    08:21-08:27

And you're like, "Man, Pastor Jeff, "if only there was a way that you could remind us of that "on the regular." What do you think this is?

    08:28-08:29

Do you know what this is?

    08:30-08:30

    It's an arrow.

    08:31-08:31

    That's all it is.

    08:32-08:33

    It's a fancy arrow.

    08:33-08:38

But that's, people ask me, "What's this symbol mean?" It's just an arrow.

    08:38-08:40

And this is to remind us why we're here.

    08:41-08:42

    We're here for God.

    08:44-08:46

We're here to exalt His Son.

    08:46-08:48

We're here to proclaim His Word.

    08:48-08:54

That's all that is, is a constant reminder, it's not about me, it's about Him.

    08:57-09:02

So Paul says, he's appealing that what?

    09:02-09:05

He says that all of you agree.

    09:07-09:09

    Like, all right, agree.

    09:11-09:12

    Agree on what?

    09:13-09:13

    Right?

    09:14-09:16

    Agree on politics.

    09:17-09:20

Agree on who has the best football team.

    09:21-09:23

Agree on who makes the best pizza.

    09:24-09:26

agree, what are we agreeing on?

    09:27-09:34

Well, there's two things church that we have to absolutely agree on.

    09:35-09:36

    And number one is doctrine.

    09:38-09:41

We should all agree on what we believe.

    09:42-09:51

Now listen, we might have different views on things like an eschatological timeline or the doctrine of election or whatever, whatever.

    09:51-09:55

But on the major points of doctrine, We must agree.

    10:00-10:11

If you're like, I'm not sure if I should agree on this or if I should fight about this, well, there's things that there are hills to die on, right?

    10:11-10:13

Things like the authority of God's Word.

    10:15-10:17

That's something we should all agree on.

    10:18-10:23

Things like the person and work of Jesus Christ, we should all agree on that.

    10:23-10:31

He is God who became man, who died to take away sin, who rose from the dead to give eternal life, who is coming again.

    10:32-10:33

We should all agree on that.

    10:35-10:37

And speaking of, we should all agree on salvation.

    10:37-10:39

    How does somebody get saved?

    10:41-10:42

It's through faith in Jesus Christ.

    10:43-10:46

It's receiving the gift of eternal life that God has given through Jesus.

    10:46-10:48

We should all agree on that.

    10:49-11:21

All the stuff we talked about last week, we should all agree that is how gets saved. We should all agree on the mission of the church. We're not here to scratch itchy ears. We're not here to make a nice social club. We are here to make disciples. Those are things we should agree on. And that's what Paul goes on to say, that there be no divisions among you. Literally that divisions in the Greek can be translated no difference of opinion. Paul says you We should not have a difference of opinion.

    11:22-11:24

We should all have the same opinion.

    11:26-11:30

And you're like, "What, Jeff, yours?" No, God's.

    11:30-11:32

We should all have God's opinion.

    11:34-11:36

See, that should be the mindset of this church.

    11:37-11:39

But it's like, well, what do you think about abortion?

    11:40-11:42

What does God think about abortion?

    11:45-11:46

What do you think about marriage?

    11:48-11:50

What does God think about marriage?

    11:51-11:52

That should be our opinion too.

    11:53-11:54

What do you think about work?

    11:56-11:57

What does God say about work?

    11:57-11:58

    We should share His opinion.

    11:59-11:59

What do you think about parenting?

    12:00-12:02

You got any opinions about parenting?

    12:02-12:03

Yeah, I do got opinions about parenting.

    12:04-12:06

    It's God's opinion about parenting.

    12:10-12:12

    What does the Bible say?

    12:12-12:14

So we should all be agreeing on doctrine.

    12:15-12:29

And another thing we should all be agreeing on is Look at verse 10, he says, "That you be united in the same mind and the same judgments." You see, doctrine speaks to what we believe.

    12:29-12:31

Submission speaks to how we act.

    12:32-12:39

In other words, unity, listen, unity will occur naturally when we agree on doctrine and live in submission to one another.

    12:41-12:47

Now, I hesitated to even bark up this tree, but I felt like we had to because this could to be a whole nother sermon series.

    12:47-12:49

But look at what Paul told the Philippian church.

    12:50-12:52

What is the attitude that we're supposed to have?

    12:53-12:56

This attitude of submission is going to result in unity.

    12:56-13:11

He tells the Philippians, he says, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, "but in humility count others more significant "than yourselves, that each of you look "not only to his own interest, "but also to the interest of others.

    13:12-13:35

"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of man." That's saying a lot.

    13:37-13:41

Here's a couple of things I want to highlight from that regarding submission that unifies us.

    13:42-13:45

is destroyed when we start thinking it's all about me.

    13:46-13:53

My ideas are the best, my ideas are the smartest, everyone should do what I want in the church and the church will be good.

    13:53-14:04

And he says, you have to, each of us, we have to humble ourselves that we consider others more important than you.

    14:07-14:11

That you walk in the doors and you're like, everybody here is more important than me.

    14:12-14:14

Unity comes when we all share that mindset.

    14:15-14:16

Like, well, how do we do that?

    14:16-14:19

Well, he tells us in Philippians, we have to have the mind of Christ.

    14:19-14:28

Now, this says a lot, like I said, but you know, we preached on this a couple times in past time, but look at that next to last statement.

    14:28-14:30

That's the one that really jumps out to me.

    14:30-14:37

That Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, took the form of a servant.

    14:40-14:42

This is where the attitude of submission comes.

    14:42-14:48

When you walk in the doors, not to say, okay, things need to happen my way, I'm gonna set everything straight.

    14:49-14:52

You need to walk in the doors and say, I'm here to serve.

    14:53-14:54

    I'm a servant.

    14:57-15:07

If God was willing to make himself a servant, as an example, I should have the same mindset, right?

    15:10-15:10

    So are you?

    15:12-15:13

    Are you a servant?

    15:17-15:22

Well, we'll know when somebody treats you like one, whether you are or not.

    15:23-15:28

We'll know when you don't get your own way, if you really see yourself as a servant.

    15:33-15:38

Really, Paul could have stopped at, verse 10 says so much here in 1 Corinthians 1, he could have stopped there.

    15:41-15:52

But, he goes on to lay out three reasons why we should each do our part for unity.

    15:54-15:56

So on your outline, I want you to jot some things down.

    15:57-15:59

Three reasons I want to fight for unity.

    16:00-16:01

Like, you want to fight about something?

    16:02-16:34

fight, okay, let's fight for unity. Let's fight for that. You're like, "Well, why do I want to do that?" Well, Paul tells us, number one, because I am responsible for the church's reputation. Because I am responsible for the church's reputation. Look at verse 11. He says, "For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers." Stop there.

    16:36-16:36

    Chloe's people.

    16:39-16:40

You know what we call them today?

    16:42-16:44

    Whistleblowers, right?

    16:46-16:47

You know what we called them when I was a kid?

    16:48-16:50

You know what we called whistleblowers when I was a kid?

    16:51-16:51

    A narc.

    16:53-16:54

    How many people remember narc?

    16:55-16:58

Okay, somebody tattles to the teacher on you.

    16:58-16:59

    You narc.

    17:01-17:03

I'm kidding, they weren't being narcs.

    17:04-17:05

    They weren't being narcs.

    17:06-17:11

No, I don't know who Chloe's people are.

    17:11-17:13

The Bible doesn't really tell us, but here's what we do know.

    17:15-17:22

They were so concerned over the fighting that was happening in the church that they had to get message to Paul, and it would have been a lot harder in that day.

    17:23-17:29

They couldn't have just posted something on Insta or sent Paul a text, right?

    17:29-17:31

    So Chloe's people were concerned.

    17:33-17:36

And Paul's like, this is a reputation that's getting back to me.

    17:36-17:39

Chloe's people says, all you do is fight.

    17:42-17:42

    Not good.

    17:46-17:53

Yeah, I heard a commercial just the other day for a product that I didn't even know existed.

    17:56-17:57

    It's called the Reputation Defender.

    17:58-18:00

How many people have heard of the Reputation Defender?

    18:00-18:02

Okay, Randy, okay, me and Randy, okay.

    18:02-18:04

Okay, so only a few of us heard that commercial.

    18:05-18:05

    All right?

    18:06-18:08

The Reputation Defender, do you know what this is?

    18:08-18:09

I had to look it up online.

    18:09-18:11

I was so intrigued by the commercial, Randy.

    18:12-18:13

I had to look it up online.

    18:14-18:18

Since 2006, a leader in online reputation management.

    18:21-18:30

What they do is they, and again, this is from their website, They fix online search results and remove personal information.

    18:31-18:36

Meaning, if there's bad stuff about you on the internet, they erase it.

    18:37-18:46

If somebody, you know, whether you're applying for a job or you just wanna sort of clean up your reputation, it's just, boop, it's erased from the internet.

    18:46-18:47

    It's gone.

    18:47-18:49

Like that part of you no longer exists.

    18:50-18:51

    It's just, boop, gone.

    18:53-18:59

And I heard that commercial and I'm like, man, I wish we had this for other things.

    19:00-19:01

Or you know what I mean?

    19:02-19:03

    You know what I mean?

    19:03-19:05

Like I do something stupid at home and I upset Aaron.

    19:07-19:11

I wish that I could just be like, whoop, gone.

    19:14-19:22

Or have you ever been like at a party and you meet somebody and you say something really awkward and stupid and you're like, Why did I say that?

    19:22-19:28

Wouldn't it be nice to just be like, whoop, now nobody remembers that, right?

    19:31-19:36

Or you got ejected from the church softball game because you lost your temper.

    19:38-19:39

    Whoop.

    19:42-19:45

Well, you know, there is no such service for the church.

    19:47-19:56

I think with the church, more than probably just about any organization on the planet, the reputation sticks.

    20:00-20:02

For better or for worse, the reputation sticks.

    20:05-20:08

And if you're like, well, I really don't care what people think about me.

    20:09-20:11

Okay, do you care what people think about Jesus?

    20:12-20:18

Because disunity doesn't just affect the church's reputation, it reflects on Jesus himself.

    20:18-20:21

Look at John 13, 35 here, we're gonna have it on the screen.

    20:22-20:33

Jesus said, "By this, all people will know "that you are my disciples, "if you have love for one another." Now, you know what I want to think Jesus said here?

    20:34-20:46

My mind wants to make it say that Jesus was like, "The world is going to know that you love the world "by the way that you love the world." That's not what he said.

    20:47-21:14

He said, "The world is going to know that we are disciples of Jesus, not by how we love them, but by how we love each other." Our reputation for unity, according to our Lord, confirms our discipleship to the world, and it also directly affects our witness, right?

    21:14-21:22

Jesus, again, you jump over to John 17, Jesus praying specifically for us, for Harvest Bible Chapel.

    21:22-21:23

    You see it right here.

    21:23-21:30

Jesus is praying, "I do not ask for these only, "but also for those who will believe in me "through their word." That's us.

    21:31-21:32

    We believe through the word.

    21:33-21:44

He says, "That they may all be one, "just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, "that they also may be in us." Why does Jesus want us to be one?

    21:45-21:45

    Here's a reason.

    21:45-22:00

He says, "So that the world may believe that you have sent me." Our witness church is directly affected by our oneness.

    22:03-22:06

I mean, that just makes sense, doesn't it?

    22:07-22:08

    I mean, it just follows.

    22:08-22:20

Imagine if you're talking to your neighbor about church and you say things like, "Well, you know what at Harvest Bible Chapel, our worship leader can't stand our children's director.

    22:21-22:44

I mean, our children's director is constantly throwing fire at staff meetings and the worship leader just has had enough." And then you tell your neighbor, "You know, our associate pastor, oh, he is way too aggressive with people." And you're like, "Well, how's the youth group?" Either they say, "How's the youth group?" You're like, "Well, our youth group's nice, "but you know what?

    22:44-22:49

"Those youth group moms, all they do is fight." That's all they do.

    22:49-22:52

They're just constantly fighting and arguing and bickering about everything.

    22:52-23:01

And then you turn to your neighbor and say, "Hey, would you like to come to our church sometime?" And they're like, "Not a chance.

    23:03-23:08

"Why would I wanna walk into that circus?" Our witness is affected by our reputation.

    23:10-23:11

Jesus prayed that we would be one.

    23:11-23:13

He died so that we would be one.

    23:14-23:18

So our reputation that we should have is that we are one.

    23:19-23:21

    So, nix the cliques.

    23:23-23:24

    All right, nix the cliques.

    23:25-23:25

    Why?

    23:27-23:28

Because you're responsible for our reputation.

    23:30-23:32

    You're responsible for our reputation.

    23:32-23:36

Number two, why I wanna fight for unity, why I wanna nix the cliques.

    23:37-23:40

Number two, because fighting is foolish.

    23:45-23:46

    Fighting is foolish.

    23:48-23:50

Look at verses 12 and 13.

    23:50-23:54

Paul is calling them out on their foolish immaturity.

    23:56-24:06

He says, "What I mean is that each one of you says, 'I follow Paul,' or, 'I follow Apollos,' or, 'I follow Cephas.'" That's Peter.

    24:06-24:11

"Or, 'I follow Christ.'" Is Christ divided?

    24:12-24:14

    Was Paul crucified for you?

    24:16-24:18

Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

    24:22-24:22

    See what he's doing?

    24:22-24:24

He's pointing out how stupid this is.

    24:25-24:26

Why are you fighting about this stuff?

    24:28-24:33

Verse 12, he says, "Each one of you." Each one of you, you should have that underlined.

    24:33-24:34

    Why?

    24:34-24:36

Because when there's disunity, who do we blame?

    24:37-24:38

    Everybody else, right?

    24:39-24:42

Paul's like, "This is not an everybody else problem.

    24:43-24:44

    This is a you problem.

    24:45-24:47

    Stop blaming everybody else.

    24:47-24:58

What are you doing for unity at the church?" And you see, they were boasting about which minister they identified with.

    24:59-25:04

Some people were like, "I follow Paul." I mean, Paul was pretty great, huh?

    25:05-25:08

Like what an awesome missionary, right?

    25:08-25:16

apostle to the Gentiles, and endured so much hardship and was so faithful in his ministry.

    25:16-25:26

And it's easy to see why there were people that loved Paul, but some maybe overly attached to him, right?

    25:26-25:29

But then you had the people that were like, Paul, all right, okay.

    25:31-25:32

    Paul's okay.

    25:33-25:36

But you know who really is the best minister is Apollos.

    25:37-25:39

Apollos was known for his eloquence.

    25:39-25:42

    Apollos was a fantastic speaker.

    25:42-25:43

We learn about that in the book of Acts.

    25:44-25:53

And I'm sure that there were people here that were like, you know what, Paul might have good theology, but there ain't nobody that preaches a sermon as beautifully as Apollos.

    25:53-25:57

He is the best preacher I've ever heard.

    25:59-26:03

And then you had people that are like, you both are whack.

    26:04-26:06

Paul, Apollos, no, no, no, no, no, no.

    26:08-26:10

    Cephas, that's Peter, right?

    26:11-26:14

Like, how can we even be arguing about this?

    26:14-26:20

    Peter, OG, Peter, right?

    26:20-26:36

Like, he wasn't just like one of the disciples, he was like one of Jesus' besties, and he was there for all of it, and he had some ups and downs, and look at what, look at like Pentecost, and Peter is the man.

    26:38-26:50

And then you had people that just had to Jesus-juke everybody that are like, "Oh, you like human ministers?

    26:50-26:58

Well, I follow Christ." Doesn't that just sound so pious?

    26:59-27:06

"I follow Christ." You see what the Corinthian church was doing.

    27:07-27:13

It was the adult version, the church version of my dad can beat up your dad, right?

    27:14-27:16

It's my pastor cannot preach your pastor.

    27:21-27:24

Aren't all four of these men preaching the same gospel?

    27:28-27:31

Oh, by the way, the last group there, I follow Christ.

    27:33-27:34

You're like, oh, wait, wait, wait.

    27:34-27:37

Isn't that who we wanna follow?

    27:40-27:42

    Yes, Jesus, obviously.

    27:45-27:51

But somehow they turned even that into an occasion for fighting.

    27:54-27:56

And you're like, well, how in the world could somebody pull that off?

    27:56-27:57

Well, people still do it today.

    27:59-28:00

    People still do that today.

    28:00-28:01

    Like, what do you mean?

    28:01-28:08

You heard these people that are like, "Oh, I don't need to go to church because I have a relationship with Jesus.

    28:09-28:17

So I don't need church." You can't defend that biblically.

    28:18-28:22

There is no such thing as a Christian detached from a church body.

    28:22-28:23

    There is no such thing.

    28:25-28:34

years ago there was the whole short-lived 15 minutes of fame of the whole "I love Jesus but hate the church." You remember that?

    28:35-28:38

"I love Jesus but I hate the church." Doesn't that just sound so pious?

    28:38-28:40

    It sounds so obnoxious.

    28:40-28:43

"I love Jesus but I hate the church." Bad idea.

    28:44-28:45

Do you know what the church is?

    28:47-28:49

The church is the bride of Christ.

    28:51-28:58

    Here's one.

    30:17-30:41

I had a friend that attended a church, that I'm like, "Hey, how are things going at your church?" And he goes, "Oh, Jeff, we're really in a bad spot right now "everybody's fighting." I'm like, "What's the problem?" He goes, "People are really upset with each other "and people are not talking to each other "and it's gotten really ugly." I'm like, "What are we fighting about at this church?" He says, "Well, when you walk in the entryway, "there's a bulletin board.

    30:42-31:05

"And they're fighting about how to divide it up "among the ministries because the Sunday school "thought they were getting all of it "and they were told they can get half "and they wanted to divide it this way, "but no, no, no, the admissions department "wanted to divide it this way, blah, blah, blah." And he goes, "It is nasty." I'm like, "Are you serious?" He's like, "Yeah." He goes, "What do you think we should do?" I said, "I think you should rip that bulletin board "off the wall and throw it in the garbage.

    31:06-31:10

"It's what I think you should do." He's like, "Whoa, whoa, but that's evangelism." I said, "No, it's not.

My old church, there was a family that have four daughters at the time they were teenage, early adolescence to teenage years.
