Why Jesus

Why Jesus? Because He Gives Me Access to God

All right, so you can open your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 4 verse 14 through 16 and while you're turning there I want you to raise your hand if you've ever had a job that you didn't like Unsurprisingly almost every single hand is in the air right now Turn to someone next to you and share about this job that you didn't like and why you didn't like it All right, you have a few seconds to share about that All right, all right, you're having too much fun.

    01:16-01:20

All right, you can talk about it later after the service is over.

    01:20-01:25

But over the course of my working career, I've had two jobs that I couldn't stand.

    01:26-01:30

I'm gonna tell you about my least favorite job later on in the message, so please pay attention.

    01:31-01:34

But right now I'm gonna tell you about my second least favorite job.

    01:35-01:42

For a summer in college, I worked as an unloader at Walmart and my shift was from 4 p.m. until 1 a.m.

    01:42-01:46

So I basically didn't have a social life that entire summer.

    01:46-01:55

During my shift for the first five or so hours, we would unload two to three semi trucks that were jam packed with all this random stuff.

    01:55-02:04

We'd organize them onto these pallets, and then we'd take the pallets out to the front floor where the stockers would put them on the shelves overnight.

    02:05-02:07

But the worst part of this job was the last two hours.

    02:08-02:13

They told us for the last two hours, just walk around the store and try to find something to do.

    02:15-02:16

    That's horrible, right?

    02:16-02:20

So I just look around, I'd find some ways to help stock the shelves or talk to customers.

    02:21-02:24

Sometimes, to be honest, I would just do laps around the store until 1 a.m.

    02:24-02:27

and then just clock out and leave, to be honest with you.

    02:27-02:38

But my supervisor always told me, "Be on the lookout for customers that you can help." And one night, I'm walking by the furniture section and there is a guy whose upper half is literally jammed into one of the shelves.

    02:39-02:41

He looks like he's frantically searching for something.

    02:42-02:49

And so I remember my supervisor said, I approached the guy and I say, "Sir, could I help you with anything?" He doesn't even look back at me.

    02:49-02:52

He just frantically waves me away like this.

    02:53-02:54

    I don't take the hint.

    02:54-03:05

I say, "Sir, are you okay?" He looks back at me and whispery yells, "Get out of here!" I took the hint that time and I walked away.

    03:06-03:11

And I go to the back of the store And then this weirdo guy again, runs up to me and says, "What's wrong with you?

    03:11-03:16

"You just blew my cover." I feel like I'm thrust into a Law and Order episode.

    03:16-03:18

I have no idea what's going on.

    03:20-03:26

As it turns out, he works at loss prevention at Walmart, and he was on a stakeout for someone he thought was stealing.

    03:28-03:31

And I said to him, "Dude, no one told me who you were.

    03:31-03:33

"No one showed me a picture of you.

    03:33-03:40

"How could I know that you worked here?" And he may have some lame excuses, he scolded me some more and then he walked away.

    03:41-03:47

And later on that night, I'm doing my lap around the store once again, and I see him on a stakeout.

    03:48-03:58

Now that I know who he is, I ignore him, I walk past him, but then he has the audacity to shoot me the double finger guns and say, "Now you're getting it, buddy."

    03:58-03:59

    (audience laughing)

    04:01-04:03

I ignored him, I didn't look him in the eyes.

    04:04-04:08

Now that I knew his job description, I knew to ignore him.

    04:09-04:14

Now that I knew who he was, I knew how to best approach him, or in this case, not approach him.

    04:15-04:23

You know, in a work environment, it's really hard to know how to approach someone and work with them if you don't fully understand their title and their job description.

    04:24-04:28

This lack of knowledge can lead to a lot of frustration and confusion.

    04:29-04:42

Well, in a much greater way, if we as believers don't understand the titles that Jesus has in scripture and the roles that he carries out on a daily basis, we will not know how to best approach him and do life alongside him.

    04:43-04:52

You're gonna miss out on so much blessing if you choose to remain ignorant of who Jesus is and what he wants to do in and through you.

    04:53-05:03

As a church, we're kicking off a two-month study in the book of Hebrews, where we're gonna drill down deep into what it means that Jesus is our high priest.

    05:04-05:06

We're gonna unpack the importance of this title.

    05:06-05:14

We're gonna go through the job description, and we're gonna discuss how this particular role of Jesus impacts us from one day to the next.

    05:16-05:17

So I'm gonna do what Pastor Jeff does.

    05:17-05:21

I'm gonna be praying for you, and I want you to be praying for me.

    05:21-05:23

Let's go before the Lord and ask for his help.

    05:30-05:30

    Amen.

    05:32-05:48

So before we dive into our passage for this morning, we need to spend a few minutes discussing the role of the high priest in the Old Testament and how Jesus became the perfect and final high priest through his life, through his death, through his resurrection, and his ascension.

    05:49-06:00

Pastor Jeff will cover this topic in greater detail over the next several weeks, but let me do a quick cliff notes version of this Old Testament role and how Jesus perfectly fulfills it.

    06:00-06:03

Otherwise, the verse we're about to study It won't really make much sense.

    06:06-06:12

So the high priest was appointed to represent the people of Israel before God.

    06:12-06:14

He was the mediator or the go-between.

    06:14-06:20

He stood on behalf of an imperfect people before a perfect God.

    06:21-06:26

God is too holy, he is too righteous, he is too pure just to overlook sin.

    06:27-06:29

And someone has to be punished for it.

    06:29-06:32

There has to be a sacrifice for the sin.

    06:34-06:44

So over the years, there were thousands upon thousands upon thousands of animals that were sacrificed and their blood was to cover the sins of Israel.

    06:45-06:57

But these sacrifices had to be continual because Israel's sin was continual and the debt that Israel owed the Lord couldn't possibly be covered by the blood of a mere animal.

    06:58-07:08

And once a year on the day of atonement, the high priest would enter into the Holy of Holies in the temple where he would spread, sprinkle the blood of a lamb upon the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant.

    07:09-07:14

He would symbolically bring all the sins of the people and himself as he did this.

    07:15-07:24

After he made the sacrifice, he wouldn't hang out, he wouldn't dilly-dally, he would leave the Holy of Holies and return the next year on the next day of atonement.

    07:25-07:30

But something we have to understand here, The high priests were sinful just like everyone else.

    07:31-07:34

And they had to make sacrifices for themselves as well.

    07:35-07:41

This system wasn't meant to last forever because it doesn't truly solve the issue of sin.

    07:42-07:52

These sacrifices pointed forward to the great and final sacrifice that Jesus would make upon the cross to pay the penalty for sin in full.

    07:53-08:00

The high priests of the Old Testament were shadows of the person and work of Jesus Christ.

    08:01-08:03

They were imperfect while he is perfect.

    08:04-08:06

They were sinful while he is sinless.

    08:06-08:13

They offer continual sacrifices while he made a once and for all sacrifice that cannot be repeated.

    08:15-08:30

If you have placed your faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, your debt has been wiped away by the precious blood of Jesus Christ and your bill is $0.00 for all of eternity.

    08:32-08:46

I love how this is described in one of my favorite hymns of all time, "It is well with my soul." My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more.

    08:47-08:49

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, oh, my soul.

    08:50-08:53

Now, if that doesn't deserve an amen, I don't know what does.

    08:54-09:04

And as we'll learn more about in a few weeks, the high priest didn't just make sacrifices for the people, but he also offered up prayers of intercession as well.

    09:04-09:09

This is a part of their duty of standing in the gap between God and Israel.

    09:10-09:19

And the book of Hebrews and the rest of the New Testament give us awesome news that our high priest, Jesus Christ, continually prays for us.

    09:21-09:23

And he intercedes for us on behalf of God the Father.

    09:24-09:28

You know, it's such an encouraging thing for me to know that other people are praying for me.

    09:28-09:35

When you tell me that you're praying for me, you have no idea how much joy and encouragement that gives me.

    09:35-09:42

But how much more encouragement, how much more joy should it give me to know that Jesus Christ is praying for me?

    09:44-09:48

We often don't know what to pray for, but he always does.

    09:50-09:58

At times, our prayer requests aren't answered with a yes because we don't know God's perfect plan for our lives, but Jesus already does.

    10:00-10:03

And we're told in the book of Revelation that Satan stands for the throne of God.

    10:04-10:05

And you know what he's doing?

    10:06-10:08

He's continually accusing you and me.

    10:09-10:13

He's continually throwing up our list of mistakes and mess ups in our faces.

    10:14-10:16

But guess what Jesus is doing?

    10:17-10:20

He's at the right hand of the Father interceding for us.

    10:20-10:23

He is rejecting all of these accusations.

    10:24-10:31

Satan is like a shrimpy first grader and Jesus is like Shaquille O'Neal, blocking each and every accusation.

    10:32-10:35

    Block, denied every single time.

    10:36-10:45

Satan cannot stand a chance against the power of the cross, against the power of our great and final high priest.

    10:46-10:50

So even though the sacrifice has been made, Our debt has already been paid.

    10:51-10:54

Jesus still carries out this role to this day.

    10:56-11:00

Now that was all just an introduction to the actual message, all right?

    11:01-11:02

We understand that, are we good?

    11:04-11:10

All right, so let's focus on how Jesus being our high priest actually affects us from one day to the next.

    11:11-11:13

Let's read Hebrews chapter four, verse 14.

    11:15-11:18

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens.

    11:19-11:23

Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession.

    11:26-11:29

So our outline for this morning is ripped right out of the text.

    11:29-11:35

Since Jesus is my high priest, number one, I must hold fast to what I believe.

    11:36-11:39

I must hold fast to what I believe.

    11:43-11:48

The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus passed through the heavens.

    11:49-11:50

    What does that mean?

    11:51-11:59

Well, after Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave, we are told in the gospels that he showed himself to his disciples and over 500 other people.

    12:00-12:04

And after 40 days, he ascended back to his heavenly home.

    12:06-12:09

But Jesus didn't just go up to heaven to take a nap.

    12:10-12:17

We are told in the rest of scripture that he is ruling and reigning over all things.

    12:18-12:26

According to this verse and the rest of the New Testament, we serve a living and active king who is at work in our lives and in this world.

    12:27-12:31

He is both transcendent, far beyond us, but he's also imminent.

    12:31-12:34

He's closer than we could possibly hope or imagine.

    12:35-12:42

And because of this awesome reality, the author of Hebrews commands us to hold fast to our confession.

    12:42-12:49

In other words, cling to what you believe, cling to the teachings of Jesus and his word.

    12:50-12:54

He's calling us not to give our culture or our enemy any ground.

    12:55-13:00

He's calling us not to give up on our faith and turn away from Jesus.

    13:02-13:05

You know, as many of you know, I was a youth pastor for almost eight years.

    13:06-13:14

And one of the greatest frustrations and disappointments of that job It wasn't the complaining parents or annoying middle school boys.

    13:15-13:17

Dan, I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about there.

    13:17-13:29

As frustrating as those groups were, the most difficult thing as a youth pastor was seeing students that you poured your heart and soul into choose to not follow after Jesus when they left.

    13:32-13:38

It really pains me to see former students posting things on social media that they shouldn't be doing.

    13:39-13:42

to hear negative reports that they're not doing well.

    13:42-13:44

    They're not following after Jesus.

    13:46-13:47

It really pains me to hear that.

    13:49-14:00

But on the flip side, there is so much joy that comes from seeing those former students who held fast to their confession, who clung to Jesus Christ no matter what.

    14:02-14:06

I've had the privilege of going to several former students' weddings, and they married godly spouses.

    14:07-14:14

And some of these kids are having kids themselves and they're raising their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

    14:15-14:24

If it brings me such joy to witness that, imagine how much more joy it brings the Father to see them clinging fast to Him.

    14:25-14:35

Imagine how much joy it brings the Father to see you hold fast to Him, even though life keeps hitting you in the face day after day after day, and you keep getting hit with trials.

    14:35-14:44

Imagine how much joy it brings the Father when you choose to hold fast to Him, when the world around you is shouting at you to let go.

    14:46-14:52

The author of Hebrews wouldn't bother to call us to hold fast if holding fast was easy.

    14:54-14:56

It's hard to hold fast to Christ.

    14:58-15:01

It's hard to live for Him and not for yourself.

    15:02-15:05

It's hard to live by faith and not by sight.

    15:06-15:12

But let us never forget, church, that we serve a living and active God who is on the throne, amen?

    15:14-15:22

His unchanging truths always trump the ever-changing truths of our culture that we're trying to be brainwashed with.

    15:23-15:31

His authority must far outweigh our own feelings, our own opinions, which constantly lead us astray.

    15:32-15:37

The Lord always holds fast to you, and there is no chance of him letting you go.

    15:38-15:42

Let's follow in his example and hold fast to him, no matter what.

    15:44-15:50

Since Jesus is my high priest, number two, I must remember that I do not struggle alone.

    15:53-15:56

I must remember that I do not struggle alone.

    15:59-16:00

    Let's read verse 15 together.

    16:02-16:19

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are yet without sin." Before we dissect this verse together, I wanna ask you a quick question.

    16:20-16:34

Have you ever shared a struggle or a hardship with someone who tried to relate to you and what you're going through, but they fell way short by giving you an example from their own lives that didn't compare at all.

    16:34-16:36

Has it ever happened to anybody else besides me?

    16:37-16:40

Maybe you shared about your struggle with a serious addiction.

    16:41-16:44

And someone told you something like, "Man, I get addiction.

    16:45-16:53

"I had a really bad coffee addiction, "but thank the Lord I was able to kick it." Okay, good for you.

    16:54-16:56

That's only been kind of close to what I'm going through.

    16:57-16:58

    Or how about this?

    16:58-17:03

to go through a really devastating loss in your personal life.

    17:04-17:06

And someone said something like, "I get it.

    17:07-17:18

"I lost my cat recently and it's been a long road." As sad as hard as it is to lose a pet, it can't compare to losing another human being.

    17:19-17:23

As far fetched as examples might be, I think we can all relate to that to some degree.

    17:24-17:31

We've all shared our struggles, we've all shared a hardship with someone We couldn't relate at all to what we were going through.

    17:32-17:33

    And that hurts, doesn't it?

    17:34-17:34

    That's a struggle.

    17:36-17:38

And at times you can feel alone in what you go through.

    17:40-17:41

    But guess what?

    17:41-17:43

That's never gonna happen with Jesus.

    17:44-17:51

You're never gonna share a struggle with Jesus and he's like, "Oh man, good luck with that one." That's never going to happen.

    17:52-18:00

We're told in verse 15 that our great high priest is able to understand and sympathize with all of our weaknesses, with all of our temptations.

    18:02-18:10

By taking on a human nature, Jesus actually had to deal with all the negatives that come along with being a human in a fallen world.

    18:11-18:15

As Jeff shared a month ago, Jesus was lied about.

    18:16-18:18

    Jesus was slandered against.

    18:19-18:20

Has that ever happened to you?

    18:22-18:25

Jesus was betrayed by his closest friends.

    18:26-18:27

Has that ever happened to you?

    18:29-18:33

Jesus experienced more physical pain than we could possibly imagine.

    18:35-18:37

Are you in pain physically right now?

    18:38-18:39

Have you had a serious medical issue?

    18:40-18:41

Are you having one right now?

    18:42-18:43

    Jesus gets it.

    18:43-18:44

    Jesus understands.

    18:47-18:49

Jesus also had to experience temptation.

    18:51-18:53

    Unlike us, he never failed.

    18:53-18:55

He never gave in to that temptation.

    18:57-19:04

After his baptism, Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit, where he doesn't eat for 40 days and 40 nights.

    19:04-19:06

Let's take a minute and think about that.

    19:06-19:08

We kind of brush on past that.

    19:09-19:13

Some of us can barely make it 40 minutes without eating, let alone 40 days.

    19:13-19:17

Imagine how painful that must have been.

    19:17-19:19

    Imagine the intense headaches.

    19:19-19:20

    Imagine the stomach pain.

    19:21-19:22

    Imagine the overall exhaustion.

    19:23-19:30

And it was at that time when Satan decides to show up and that's when he's gonna tempt Jesus, when he is at his weakest physically.

    19:32-19:34

But unsurprisingly, Jesus shuts him down.

    19:35-19:36

    He rejects every single temptation.

    19:37-19:40

But that wasn't the only time Jesus was tempted.

    19:41-19:47

We're told in the gospel of Luke that Satan departed from Jesus until an opportune time.

    19:49-19:55

Another opportune time for Satan was in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus is contemplating what's about to happen to him.

    19:55-19:57

    He's contemplating his trial.

    19:57-20:00

He's contemplating his death upon a cross.

    20:03-20:04

    Imagine that.

    20:05-20:11

He was in such agony, he's bleeding from his forehead, sweating drops of blood.

    20:13-20:16

In those moments, there's that temptation to walk away from the cross.

    20:18-20:20

to thank the Lord that Jesus doesn't do that.

    20:20-20:23

Instead, he obeys his Father's perfect will.

    20:24-20:28

Jesus faced every single temptation that we face.

    20:29-20:31

But as I said earlier, he never gave in to that temptation.

    20:32-20:35

He had victory every single time.

    20:36-20:38

Jesus never had a sinful thought.

    20:38-20:40

He never spoke a destructive word.

    20:41-20:43

He never carried out a selfish action.

    20:43-20:46

He never failed to do what God called him to do.

    20:46-20:53

Jesus always triumphed over temptation, and his victory is now our victory.

    20:53-20:56

We share in the victory of Jesus Christ.

    20:57-21:04

Our sins are no longer held against us because the sinless one was punished for our many failures.

    21:05-21:21

You used to be a slave to your desires and urges, but now you've been set free from the power of sin, and the Holy Spirit now lives inside of you, and he gives you the power, gives you the ability to say no to sin and yes to righteousness.

    21:24-21:30

Listen, if you're a follower of Christ, you are not powerless to fight against that temptation that you're struggling with.

    21:30-21:34

You are not powerless to overcome that sin pattern in your life.

    21:36-21:40

You don't have to give in to that urge to lie to cover up your tracks.

    21:41-21:46

You don't have to give in to that desire to twist the truth to make other people think better of you.

    21:47-21:51

You don't have to look at that website later on tonight when everybody else in your house is asleep.

    21:53-21:57

You don't have to put others down so you can make yourself feel better.

    21:58-22:04

As Justin preached last week, you don't have to let anger control how you speak and how you act.

    22:05-22:08

You are no longer a victim, you are a victor.

    22:10-22:15

Please stop having the victim mentality that you have no chance in your battle against sin.

    22:15-22:19

Jesus sacrificed too much for you just to roll over and accept defeat.

    22:20-22:27

Don't wave the white flag anymore when an unbelievable amount of power and strength lives within you.

    22:29-22:33

Listen to how the Apostle Paul describes us in Romans 8:37.

    22:34-22:43

"Know in all of these things, "we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." Not victims, conquerors.

    22:45-22:49

To be clear, we'll never be perfect the side of eternity.

    22:50-22:58

In the chapter before in Romans, Paul says there is a war constantly raging within each and every one of us.

    22:58-23:04

It's a war between our sinful flesh and our new natures in Jesus Christ.

    23:04-23:10

A war between who we used to be and who God's already declared us to be in Jesus Christ.

    23:13-23:19

And at points in Romans chapter seven, it seems like Paul feels powerless in his battle against sin.

    23:20-23:22

But thankfully, he points to the solution.

    23:23-23:28

He writes this, "Wretched man that I am, "who will deliver me from this body of death?

    23:28-23:42

"Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord." Again, the same Savior who delivered you from the penalty of sin will continually deliver you from the power of sin.

    23:42-23:44

    Jesus understands.

    23:45-23:47

Jesus understands what you're going through.

    23:47-23:49

    He understands your temptations.

    23:49-23:51

He understands the pressure of it.

    23:51-23:57

He sympathizes with you, and he offers you his comfort so that you can know that you're not alone.

    23:57-24:04

He offers you his strength so that you can find a way of escape every single time that sin knocks on your door.

    24:05-24:15

As we're told earlier in Hebrews, for because Jesus himself has suffered when tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.

    24:17-24:18

    Jesus offers you help.

    24:20-24:24

Jesus offers you help in the form of His grace, His word, and His people.

    24:26-24:33

You have to ask yourself, will I choose to accept this help, or will I choose to reject it?

    24:33-24:41

Will you take advantage of the escape hatch when you're tempted that God gives you, Will you choose to walk through the wide open door of sin?

    24:41-24:49

Will you put yourself in situations where you know you're gonna be tempted, or will you avoid these temptation triggers?

    24:51-24:58

Will you struggle in silence, or will you reach out to the Christian community that God has put you in?

    25:01-25:11

Because Jesus is your high priest, you should never say, "No one knows what I'm going through." Instead, what you should say is, no one knows what I'm going through like Jesus does.

    25:13-25:18

Because Jesus is your high priest, you should never say, I'm never gonna overcome this temptation.

    25:18-25:20

I'll never get over this sin pattern.

    25:22-25:29

Instead, you should say, I am more than a conqueror through him who loves me, and I share in the victory of my Savior.

    25:30-25:38

No temptation, no sin pattern stands a chance against the power of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within you.

    25:39-25:40

    It's not even a contest.

    25:43-25:50

All right, finally, since Jesus is my high priest, I must boldly approach the Lord for help.

    25:52-25:54

I must boldly approach the Lord for help.

    26:01-26:04

At the beginning of this message, I share with you about my second least favorite job.

    26:06-26:07

    Who remembers what that was?

    26:07-26:08

    Were you paying attention?

    26:09-26:09

    Well, okay, good.

    26:09-26:11

Okay, now I feel much better.

    26:11-26:11

    Okay, good.

    26:11-26:12

    Now let's go on.

    26:14-26:19

My least favorite job happened when I was in seminary full-time in Louisville, Kentucky.

    26:21-26:28

I was there for about two years and I worked 30 hours a week as, gasp, a deck collector.

    26:30-26:32

I know, I know, you all think much less of me now.

    26:32-26:36

I can't even listen to this guy anymore, Please have some sympathy for me.

    26:37-26:43

And let me give you a small window into what it's like to be the person who makes a call that nobody wants to pick up.

    26:44-26:47

    I worked library collection calls.

    26:47-26:48

    (audience laughing)

    26:50-26:51

    I know what you're thinking.

    26:51-26:53

You pestered people about 25 cent fines?

    26:54-27:01

No, people had hundreds, if not thousands, upon thousands of dollars in overdue library fees.

    27:02-27:04

Now you're thinking, how is that possible?

    27:05-27:06

And that's what I thought when I was hired.

    27:07-27:11

But people wouldn't return books for years and sometimes even decades.

    27:13-27:15

    Now I wasn't a pushy debt collector.

    27:15-27:17

I wasn't someone trying to scare people or intimidate them.

    27:17-27:18

I really wanted to help people.

    27:19-27:25

I didn't want something as dumb as a library fee to negatively affect someone's credit score.

    27:25-27:33

And most of the time, if you returned your overdue books, the library fee would be taken down to a much smaller scale just wiped out entirely.

    27:34-27:41

But as one woman told me, I'll never forget, you know, man, if you return this book, the whole fine will be taken away.

    27:42-27:43

    I can't do that.

    27:44-27:45

    Why is that?

    27:46-27:49

Well, my book burned up in my boyfriend's meth lab.

    27:51-27:52

I said, yep, that would do it.

    27:53-27:53

    Have a great day.

    27:57-28:00

During my time as a debt collector, I was called every single square word in the book.

    28:01-28:04

I think people even invented some new ones to throw my way.

    28:04-28:06

    People threatened to kill me.

    28:07-28:08

They threatened to ruin my life.

    28:09-28:14

They threatened to sue me for everything I was worth, which at that point as a seminary student wasn't very much.

    28:16-28:18

But I just remember I had to drive across a bridge to get to work.

    28:19-28:22

Every single time I drove across that bridge, a cloud would just go over me.

    28:23-28:25

As I knew, nobody would want to hear from me.

    28:26-28:31

As I knew everyone would be annoyed that I disturbed them, I would just be called the worst possible things.

    28:32-28:38

I approached every single call with fear and hesitation instead of boldness and confidence.

    28:39-28:42

I always expected that the person that I'd aligned wouldn't want to hear from me.

    28:43-28:45

And they'd be greatly annoyed that I disturbed them.

    28:48-28:50

No, honestly, don't we feel the same way with God sometimes?

    28:53-28:57

At times we hesitantly approach him like we're annoying callers.

    28:59-29:01

who are bugging him when he's doing something much more important.

    29:02-29:04

    And he'll think, "Taylor, again?

    29:04-29:06

"Come on, this guy's always bothering me.

    29:06-29:08

"What's going on again?" But guess what?

    29:09-29:10

    God's not like that.

    29:11-29:12

Say that with me, God's not like that.

    29:14-29:16

    God doesn't have office hours.

    29:17-29:19

God doesn't put the do not disturb sign on his door.

    29:20-29:21

    We can never interrupt him.

    29:21-29:31

We can never bother him because he is the greatest multitasker in the universe and can do an infinite number of things effortlessly at once.

    29:31-29:35

There is a 0% chance of him being swamped or overwhelmed.

    29:36-29:38

He always has time for me.

    29:38-29:41

He always has time for you.

    29:43-29:47

Listen to what the author of Hebrews has to say about this in chapter four, verse 16.

    29:48-29:58

"Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne "of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help time of need.

    29:59-30:15

So since Jesus ascended into heaven, since he sits at the right hand of the Father, and since he sympathizes with all that we're going through, we're encouraged to bring all of our burdens, all of our problems, all of our anxieties before the throne of grace.

    30:16-30:20

And we are promised that we will never, ever be turned away.

    30:21-30:28

That God will always give us his grace, His mercy and His help for every situation.

    30:31-30:40

Listen, when you approach the Father in prayer, He doesn't look at you like an annoying or pushy debt collector who's calling at the worst possible time.

    30:42-30:49

Instead, He looks at you as a beloved son or daughter who is knocking on His door at the exact right moment.

    30:51-30:52

    Do you believe that?

    30:53-31:02

Do you believe that God actually wants to hear from you, that he wants to spend time in prayer with you, that actually delights him to be in relationship with you?

    31:03-31:07

Do you approach him like a trusting child running to their father's lap?

    31:08-31:11

Or do you approach him like an uncertain acquaintance?

    31:13-31:18

Through Jesus Christ, you have been given unlimited access to the Father.

    31:19-31:23

You have the ear of the God of the universe.

    31:24-31:25

    Think about that.

    31:26-31:34

You can talk to God anytime that you want, anytime you need something from him.

    31:36-31:39

The Lord wants you to cast your burdens upon him.

    31:40-31:46

He already knows your issues, but he wants to hear you say them anyway to admit your need for him.

    31:48-31:50

Now let's be honest this morning, who's in need right now?

    31:51-32:01

I'm not talking just financially, talking personally, relationally, mentally, every hand should be up right now because my hand is up right now.

    32:01-32:04

We are, everyone get your hand up, come on, come on.

    32:04-32:12

We all are in need right now, not just today, but every other day, which means we must constantly be seeking after the Lord.

    32:13-32:18

We must constantly be seeking after him in prayer for his help and for his power and for his strength.

    32:20-32:32

Yes, we must always approach him with reverence and respect, but let us not fail to also approach him with boldness, with confidence, with honesty and transparency.

    32:34-32:53

We haven't even begun to scratch the surface of all that it means that Jesus is our high priest, but I hope and pray this introduction has encouraged you to hold fast to your faith, to remember that you do not struggle alone, and to boldly approach the Father whenever you need help.

    32:55-32:57

What a great high priest that we serve.

    32:58-33:04

He saves us, he secures us, he sympathizes with us, he prays for us.

    33:05-33:07

Our great high priest is on the throne.

    33:08-33:09

    He knows what he's doing.

    33:10-33:12

He's in control of our lives.

    33:13-33:15

Let's live like we actually believe that.

    33:16-33:17

    Let's pray.

    33:19-33:26

Father, what an awesome, awesome word from Hebrews, Lord.

    33:28-33:39

That your son knows what we go through, that he sympathized with every single temptation, every single struggle that we face, that he offers us his comfort, his strength, and his help.

    33:41-33:44

Lord, in a room this size, know that many of us are struggling right now.

    33:47-33:48

Many of us are struggling with something.

    33:48-33:50

I don't know what it is, but you do.

    33:51-34:03

I pray that you minister to every single person in this room in the way that you minister to, that you would love them, that you would encourage them, that you would comfort them, that you would give them your hope.

    34:04-34:12

And if there's someone in this room who doesn't know you, I pray they would place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation right now.

    34:14-34:17

That he would become their final and great high priest.

    34:20-34:22

Lord, this life is so hard.

    34:24-34:25

It's difficult to hold fast to you.

    34:26-34:28

It's difficult to fight against temptation.

    34:30-34:34

Lord, help us to believe that you're on the throne.

    34:35-34:39

Help us to believe that you know what you're doing Everything that we go through is for a reason.

    34:40-34:45

Everything that we go through is for our ultimate good and for your glory, even though we can't see it.

    34:47-34:52

Lord, I pray this message wouldn't just stay in this room, but it would go with us and affect the rest of our weeks.

    34:53-34:55

    In Jesus' name, amen.

Hebrews chapter four, we're going to be picking up in verse 11.

    00:55-00:56

    And 'tis the season, right?

    00:59-00:59

    For sickness.

    01:02-01:06

It seems like everybody I know is either getting it or getting over it.

    01:08-01:12

And I guess it's a valid excuse for calling off work.

    01:12-01:26

But you know, I was looking this week at some more non-traditional excuses that people have given for calling off work.

    01:27-01:28

Now I'm gonna share these with you.

    01:29-01:35

Actually, I found these online, these weren't excuses that staff at this church has given for calling off work.

    01:36-01:37

But some of these kind of cracked me up.

    01:37-01:39

These are the worst excuses for missing work.

    01:39-01:42

There's a ton of them, but I just wanna share a couple of my favorites with you.

    01:44-01:44

    Here's one.

    01:45-01:53

A guy said, "Grandma tried to poison me with ham." Grandma.

    01:56-01:57

    I laughed at this.

    01:57-01:59

I don't know, this was just, it just cracked me up.

    01:59-02:06

But the one guy called in, he said, "I'm stuck in the blood pressure machine at the grocery store and can't get out."

    02:06-02:07

    (congregation laughing)

    02:12-02:15

There are a lot of them that's actually circled around animals.

    02:15-02:19

So animals are really good for excuses for missing work, right?

    02:20-02:22

    Here's a couple of those.

    02:22-02:26

One was the guy said that he couldn't come to work because I was bitten by a duck.

    02:30-02:34

Or this guy that said, I can't come to work because I threw my back out chasing a beaver.

    02:34-02:35

    (audience laughing)

    02:40-02:43

Or this one, this one has to be made up.

    02:43-02:44

But I'm gonna share it anyways.

    02:45-02:50

On the off chance that this is real, this could be the craziest one.

    02:52-03:00

The guy said, "I have to attend the funeral "of my wife's cousin's pet "because I am an uncle and a pallbearer."

    03:01-03:02

    (audience laughing)

    03:04-03:17

Or last was this guy just called in and said, you know, I can't make it to work today because I forgot that I was hired for the job.

    03:19-03:19

    (audience laughing)

    03:19-03:21

And that sounds like something that I would do.

    03:24-03:26

But there was a bunch of, I read a whole bunch of them this week.

    03:26-03:34

A lot of really funny excuses why people gave who were not able to go to, not able to come into work today.

    03:35-03:39

And the title of today's message is, "Why Jesus?

    03:40-03:48

"Because we must give an account." You know, there's a day coming that you're going to stand before God.

    03:52-04:04

And I can't imagine all of the excuses that we're going to hear on that day as to why people refuse the gift of God's provision in Jesus Christ.

    04:05-04:07

On that day, it's not gonna be funny.

    04:08-04:09

    Nobody's going to be laughing.

    04:11-04:14

It's going to be tragic on that day.

    04:15-04:16

    And here's the truth, church.

    04:19-04:20

    There is no excuse.

    04:23-04:27

We've seen over the last couple of weeks the call, do not harden your heart.

    04:28-04:37

We talked about the Israelites who were constantly, "Come on God, prove yourself to me, prove yourself to me." They were never thankful, always complaining.

    04:39-04:41

    They persisted in their sin.

    04:43-04:47

Jesus Christ did all of the work to save you.

    04:49-05:54

And He calls you to enter His rest because true faith lives in the Sabbath rest of Jesus Christ. So if you're sitting here, or you've been watching this, and you haven't given your life to Jesus Christ, you haven't fully received him as Lord and Savior born again, he is my Lord, he is my life. If you haven't done that, I just got to ask you, what's your compelling reason that you haven't received him? Did he not prove his love for you enough? Are his promises not glorious enough? Is your way working? Have you found some methodology of life that far surpasses Wisdom of your Creator?

    06:02-06:09

We've been talking about the rest that Jesus provides, and Jesus actually talked about this.

    06:10-06:11

    Matthew 11, verse 28.

    06:13-06:16

Very familiar verse, but look at it again with fresh eyes.

    06:17-06:43

Jesus says, "Come to me, all who labor "and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." And as we fast forward to Hebrews 4:11, the Hebrew writer, in this little passage we're looking at today, he's saying, "Hey, last call.

    06:45-06:54

Last call. I know that phrase is usually used in another context, but we're using it here because that's what this passage is about today.

    06:54-07:05

Last call. So on your outline, if you're taking notes, which we always encourage, no excuses. This is the last call to enter Jesus rest.

    07:07-07:07

    No excuses.

    07:08-07:11

Number one, you have the command.

    07:13-07:15

"You have the command." Look at verse 11.

    07:16-07:34

He says, "Let us therefore strive to enter that rest "so that no one may fall "by the same sort of disobedience." Let's stop there for a second.

    07:34-07:35

This is a call to urgency.

    07:36-07:41

He's saying, "Don't be like Israel and Moses' day." Don't be like them.

    07:41-07:42

    Don't keep putting God off.

    07:43-07:44

    Don't keep hardening your heart.

    07:48-07:53

But if you just stop and think about it for a second, it's a very interesting phrase, isn't it?

    07:53-07:57

He says, here's what I'm, your last call, here's what I'm calling you to do.

    07:57-08:02

You need to strive to enter the rest.

    08:06-08:07

    Isn't that a weird concept?

    08:08-08:10

    Strive to enter rest?

    08:14-08:16

And you might be thinking, "Wait, wait, wait, wait.

    08:16-08:19

I thought Jesus gave us rest.

    08:20-08:34

So how in the world do we strive to enter this rest that Christ provided?" We need to be abundantly clear here, so please listen.

    08:35-08:37

    He's addressing unbelievers here.

    08:39-08:50

He's not saying, he is not saying, Christians, you need to work in order to get saved and you need to keep working in order to stay saved.

    08:50-08:52

    He is not saying that.

    08:52-08:54

Everyone say he is not saying that.

    08:56-09:02

Okay, the Greek word tense here for strive means it's a single act.

    09:03-09:05

He's saying you need to do this single act.

    09:05-09:08

So this striving isn't this ongoing working thing.

    09:08-09:11

He says this is a single thing.

    09:11-09:14

He's talking specifically about receiving Christ.

    09:15-09:16

And he's not saying work to earn.

    09:16-09:21

He's saying you need to get serious about Jesus Christ.

    09:23-09:30

Or to use another phrase, he's saying you need to violently turn from your sin.

    09:32-09:36

You need to do whatever it takes to enter this rest that Jesus provides.

    09:38-09:39

    People, what does that mean?

    09:42-09:49

I wanna sort of do a flashback to the gospels because Jesus actually talked about this a couple of times.

    09:50-09:52

Look at the screen, Luke 16, 16.

    09:52-09:53

    Do we have that one?

    09:53-09:55

Couldn't remember if I put that one on the thing.

    09:55-09:55

    There we go.

    09:57-10:26

Jesus said this, he said, "The law and the prophets were until John," that's John the Baptist, "since then the good news of the kingdom of God preached. Look at this last phrase. He says, "And everyone forces his way into it." You know, in a parallel passage, Matthew 11, 12, Jesus said that last phrase this way.

    10:27-10:39

He said, "The violent, take it by force." It's quite a different picture than we're used to, isn't it?

    10:41-10:50

A lot of those we talk about receiving Jesus is put a check mark on the card or bow your heads if you wanna pray and receive Jesus, raise your hand or whatever, whatever.

    10:50-10:52

And I'm not saying those things aren't valid.

    10:53-10:54

I'm not saying that at all.

    10:55-11:01

But Jesus said when the kingdom is preached, there's a violence of people getting into it.

    11:02-11:04

It's people receiving it by force.

    11:04-11:05

You could translate it this way.

    11:06-11:13

Jesus was saying the kingdom of God is relentless and relentless people press their way into it and they press in violently.

    11:14-11:15

It's sort of like the picture.

    11:15-11:18

Have you ever been, ladies and gentlemen, have you ever been to the Pittsburgh airport?

    11:20-11:23

And you know, you get on those trains that take you to the terminals.

    11:23-11:24

You know what I'm talking about?

    11:25-11:26

Okay, you know what I'm talking about, right?

    11:26-11:33

Have you ever been there when it's busy and the train pulls up and you've got to get to the terminal and what do you do?

    11:34-11:46

Do you stand there and go, "Well, I don't see a clear path into the train, "so I'll just stand here and wait." And if you do that, you're never going to get on.

    11:47-11:48

When those doors open, what do you do?

    11:50-11:51

You force your way in, don't you?

    11:52-11:57

Grab the luggage, grab the kids, and you put your head down and straight through.

    11:58-11:59

    Plot through, right?

    12:00-12:01

    No, just me?

    12:02-12:07

All right, if there's anybody here that I trampled at the Pittsburgh airport, consider this my formal apology.

    12:07-12:08

But you know what I'm talking about, right?

    12:09-12:11

You gotta force your way in.

    12:13-12:15

And that's sort of the picture here.

    12:18-12:19

    That it's not automatic.

    12:20-12:26

It's not like the gospel is the train that pulls up And you're like, "Oh yeah, that looks good." Jesus said, "No, no, no, no, no.

    12:26-12:29

When the kingdom's preached, people are forcing their way into it.

    12:31-12:37

They violently press in." Like, what does that look like?

    12:37-12:38

I'll tell you exactly what that looks like.

    12:38-12:39

It looks like a couple of things.

    12:39-12:42

First of all, it's violent repentance.

    12:44-12:46

It means violently turning from sin.

    12:48-12:49

    Here's what I mean.

    12:50-13:04

If you're involved in a relationship, an affair of some kind, physical or emotional, violent repentance says, "You know, I can't be in this relationship, it's over.

    13:06-13:13

"We're doing things that dishonor God's plan for marriage, "for God's plan for sexuality, it's over right now.

    13:14-13:17

"And I'm coming clean." That's violent repentance.

    13:18-13:19

    That's pressing in.

    13:20-13:22

    or pornography addiction.

    13:22-13:30

You're like, you know, I shouldn't be looking at this and someday, someday I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm probably gonna stop doing this.

    13:30-13:34

No, violent repentance is, no, today.

    13:35-13:44

I'm getting software installed, Covenant Eyes or something like that, or I'm taking my smartphone and I'm trashing it and I'm getting a rotary phone.

    13:48-13:49

    That's violent repentance.

    13:50-13:51

    That's what Jesus said.

    13:51-13:55

The people that get serious about the kingdom, they force their way in.

    13:56-13:59

Because there's no cost, it's too much when they see the call.

    14:01-14:02

    Maybe it's addiction.

    14:02-14:04

    I know I shouldn't have this addiction.

    14:04-14:06

I'm taking too much of this.

    14:06-14:07

I'm drinking too much of that.

    14:07-14:11

Violent repentance is, I'm signing up for Christian recovery group today.

    14:12-14:16

I'm getting around a group of people that are going to love me and care about me.

    14:16-14:17

And I'm done with this today.

    14:18-14:24

I'm not hoping it goes away on its own like like a pimple like that's not going to happen.

    14:25-14:27

Violent repentance means I'm going after it.

    14:29-14:30

That's what Jesus was talking about.

    14:32-14:36

I know this is what God is telling me to stop doing.

    14:37-14:39

So I'm violently quitting this now.

    14:42-14:43

I'm not just going to hope it happens.

    14:45-14:46

    That's what he's talking about.

    14:48-14:57

And that's why the Hebrew writer says, "Strive to enter this, rest." It's violent repentance, it's also violent faith.

    14:58-15:00

It's violently acting on what I know.

    15:05-15:12

You're gonna go home, you're gonna talk to a friend later today and they're like, "What did you talk about in church?" Well, the preacher's encouraging us to violence.

    15:12-15:13

    Yes, I am.

    15:14-15:17

    Violent faith, violent faith.

    15:18-15:22

I'm honoring God with his money right now.

    15:22-15:23

    It's not mine, it's his.

    15:24-15:26

And God calls me to be faithful in doing that.

    15:26-15:27

    I'm honoring him right now.

    15:28-15:31

I'm going to be the spiritual leader in my home right now.

    15:32-15:39

Dad's, you know, I've been kind of sitting on the back burner, you know, letting things kind of happen or hoping mom runs the ship.

    15:39-15:41

God's called you to run the ship.

    15:43-15:50

And if there's any intentionality behind the spiritual leadership, man, it's gonna be on you.

    15:52-15:54

You might have to sit down with your kids and say, "Hey, guess what, kids?

    15:55-16:09

"We're saying no to some things "so that we can say yes to some things "that God's calling us to do." Let's talk about baptism for a second.

    16:11-16:13

Did you know that baptism is a command?

    16:14-16:15

    Did you know that?

    16:16-16:17

    Baptism is a command.

    16:19-16:24

    It's not for some Christians.

    16:26-16:29

It's for everyone coming to Jesus Christ.

    16:29-16:30

    It's a command.

    16:32-16:32

    It's a command.

    16:32-16:33

And what do you do to commands?

    16:34-16:36

    You obey them.

    16:40-16:42

And if you haven't taken that step, why haven't you?

    16:46-16:49

And I just want to encourage you, next week we're having a baptism.

    16:49-16:51

I'm sorry, I have an eyelash, can you give me a second?

    16:52-16:55

Did you ever have that, ladies and gentlemen, while you're preaching a sermon?

    16:56-17:00

You get this eyelash, it's just like, did I get it?

    17:01-17:01

    All right.

    17:02-17:03

What was I talking about, Darla?

    17:04-17:05

    Baptism, thank you.

    17:07-17:15

If you're unwilling to obey Jesus Christ in step one, how are you ever gonna take step two in your faith?

    17:17-17:19

Like, I just wanna do what God has for me.

    17:19-17:21

Okay, well, step one is baptism.

    17:22-17:23

    That is step one.

    17:23-17:26

And if you're not willing to do that, how are you gonna do step two?

    17:27-17:29

Like, well, when can I do that?

    17:29-17:30

Next, I just told you that, next week.

    17:31-17:32

Next week we're having a baptism service.

    17:33-17:37

Violent faith says, okay, If that's what God's calling me to do, I'm doing it.

    17:37-17:39

And there's no question, I'm just doing it.

    17:40-17:42

Because that's what God says, that's violent faith.

    17:46-17:48

I've put it off long enough, there's no excuses.

    17:52-17:53

    Violent faith is like Zacchaeus.

    17:53-17:55

Remember Zacchaeus, the wee little man?

    17:55-17:56

    You familiar with the song?

    17:57-17:58

A wee little man was he?

    18:00-18:06

I love the story of Zacchaeus because he shows us what this violent repentance faith looks like, remember?

    18:07-18:20

Zacchaeus was like, "I'm giving half of my stuff away, "and if I've ripped anybody off of anything, "I'm repaying them back four times." And Jesus said, "This man got saved." Now, did Zacchaeus buy his way into heaven?

    18:20-18:21

    Absolutely not.

    18:21-18:24

But Jesus said, "Look at the fruit of this man's life.

    18:24-18:25

    "He's serious about it.

    18:26-18:28

"He's pressing in to the kingdom.

    18:28-18:34

"He's striving to enter the rest." I'm honoring God no matter the cost.

    18:35-18:41

And for the guy or gal that's still sitting here saying, well, you know, this sounds like you're saying you're saved by works.

    18:41-18:47

No, these are not works anymore than entering the promised land was a work.

    18:49-18:53

In all of these cases, it's stepping forward by faith, trusting God's provision.

    18:53-18:55

And that's how the gospel is.

    18:55-18:58

It's like, I'm done trying to be religious.

    18:59-19:02

My Roman Catholic background is no longer my authority.

    19:02-19:04

    God's Word is my authority.

    19:05-19:06

    His way is right.

    19:06-19:16

I know what He's telling me to turn from and turn to, and I'm doing whatever He wants me to do, whatever He says to do, I'm doing it now, and I'm doing it violently.

    19:18-19:19

    You have the command.

    19:21-19:23

    The command is to strive.

    19:26-19:27

    The command is to strive.

    19:29-19:33

Number two, no excuses, last call to enter Jesus rest.

    19:33-19:34

    You have the information.

    19:35-19:36

    You have the information.

    19:37-19:38

A lot of you know this verse.

    19:40-19:44

And I think it's good for us to study it in the context in which it was written, right?

    19:45-19:46

    Look at verse 12.

    19:47-20:03

It says, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

    20:06-20:13

You know, that's going to show up on signs on pastors' offices, or maybe you have a bookmark that says that in your Bible or whatever.

    20:13-20:16

But let's understand this in its context.

    20:16-20:20

He says, you know, strive to enter the rest, right?

    20:21-20:25

And then he says, for the word of God, like, okay, for.

    20:26-20:35

That means there's a connection between entering God's rest and the Word of God.

    20:36-20:38

And it's a pretty obvious connection, isn't it?

    20:39-20:51

Because it's disobedience to the Word that is actually forfeiting entering God's rest here and eternally.

    20:54-20:55

And that's where the Hebrew writer is going here.

    20:55-21:01

He's like, "Hey, hey, hey, this is God's word." And when God says something, he means it.

    21:04-21:06

Breaking it down, first of all, he says God's word is living.

    21:08-21:11

We believe that this book was written by God.

    21:11-21:11

    It's living.

    21:12-21:17

And it's called living because the author is alive, the Holy Spirit.

    21:17-21:27

He's just as alive today as he was when he wrote this, just as alive as he's always been.

    21:28-21:31

This is a living word from God.

    21:32-21:39

It's not some archaic, out of touch text, so he doesn't understand the issues that we're facing in 2023.

    21:40-21:42

Yes, he does because he's alive.

    21:42-21:44

This is the eternal word of God.

    21:44-21:45

    It's living.

    21:48-21:50

So secondly, this word of God is active.

    21:51-21:57

Isaiah 55 tells us that God's word always accomplishes the purposes for which He sends it out.

    21:58-22:06

There's not another thing on this planet that can be said of, always successful, always does what it's supposed to, God's Word always does.

    22:08-22:12

That's why anybody who stands up here to preach, that's our main concern, we gotta get it right.

    22:12-22:14

We gotta represent the Word of God.

    22:15-22:19

Small group leaders, precepts leaders, that's our concern.

    22:19-22:20

    We gotta get it right.

    22:21-22:22

    This is God's Word.

    22:24-23:36

And it's active. It's alive, it's active. Then next he says it's piercing or exposing, we could say. Now the word for sword there is actually a dagger. You know, when you think sword maybe you're thinking like He-Man or some giant pirate sword or whatever. It's accurate cut in an accurate place. And that's what he's saying about the Word of God, it cuts us open. It reveals our hearts. Now, we already talked about the deceitfulness of sin back in chapter 3, verse 13. You remember that? We talked about the deceitfulness of sin, well, that's not even the worst part of the problem because God's word tells us in Jeremiah 17, 9, that your heart is deceitful above all things. And this is why we need the word of God, because listen, your heart will lie to you in a most convincing way.

    23:38-23:46

And it makes you rationalize your sin. It makes you justify yourself and it'll try to stop you from repenting.

    23:48-23:51

That's true of every single one of us sitting here, every single one of us watching this.

    23:52-23:57

We have this ability to rationalize our own sin, make excuses for ourselves.

    23:57-24:04

Like I realize this is probably wrong, but here's why it's okay for me to do this.

    24:05-24:07

When that happens, do you know what's going on?

    24:09-24:11

Your deceitful heart is lying to you.

    24:11-24:12

    That's what's happening.

    24:14-24:15

He's using the examples we used before.

    24:15-24:18

We talked about having the affair, right?

    24:22-24:26

Do you know what is said in the heart of somebody going through the affair?

    24:29-24:30

    Typically things like this.

    24:32-24:37

No one would understand this special bond I have with this woman who's not my wife.

    24:37-24:38

    Nobody would understand.

    24:39-24:45

We have this really amazing connection and we have this really special bond People just wouldn't understand.

    24:46-24:47

    Love is really what matters.

    24:51-24:51

    You know what that is?

    24:51-24:52

That's your heart lying to you.

    24:54-24:56

And you, like a fool, are believing it.

    24:59-25:00

    We talked about pornography.

    25:02-25:04

The heart will rationalize that too.

    25:04-25:06

    Hey, hey, nobody knows.

    25:07-25:10

You're not really hurting anyone by doing this.

    25:11-25:12

What's your heart lying to you?

    25:14-25:15

    We talked about addiction.

    25:18-25:20

Well, your heart will lie to you about that, won't it?

    25:22-25:23

What's the biggest lie with addiction?

    25:24-25:27

I can quit this anytime I want, right?

    25:28-25:37

I'm just doing this, it just takes the edge off a little bit, but I can quit doing this anytime I want.

    25:38-25:41

That little voice that tells you that, You know what that is?

    25:41-25:44

That is your lying heart lying to you.

    25:51-25:56

So sin will lie to you and your heart reinforces the lie and deceives you into believing it.

    25:57-26:00

And you're like, wait, wait, you took a weird turn here, Pastor Jeff.

    26:00-26:02

I thought we were talking about the word of God.

    26:02-26:02

    Oh yes, we are.

    26:03-26:04

    'Cause that's the point.

    26:05-26:07

It's the word of God that exposes all this.

    26:08-26:11

Otherwise, we'd never know what the truth is.

    26:11-26:13

We wouldn't have the objective standard.

    26:13-26:18

And we'd just be, my lying heart would be talking to you with your lying heart, and what do you think's true?

    26:19-26:20

And we're just lying to each other.

    26:20-26:24

But God gave us this word here that we can say this is what the truth is.

    26:25-26:27

We know what the truth is.

    26:27-26:29

And God's word exposes the lie.

    26:33-26:34

You see, that's what he's talking about here.

    26:34-26:36

God's word cuts you to the heart.

    26:39-26:42

It says here that God's Word discerns.

    26:43-26:51

That Word discern, that speaks to being a critic or a judge, meaning God's Word analyzes the facts.

    26:54-26:57

God's Word ultimately is what determines whether you're real or not.

    27:00-27:10

Now you see church, the word isn't just God's standard for self-evaluation or elder evaluation for the church.

    27:10-27:19

Yes, it is those things, but ultimately where the Hebrew writer is going with this is look, God's word is God's standard of evaluation.

    27:26-27:32

You have in your hands or on your lap or on your phone, did I miss anybody?

    27:34-27:39

You have the very thing that God is going to use to judge you if you do not receive Jesus.

    27:43-27:47

So you're not gonna be able to stand before him and be like, well, you know what, God?

    27:49-27:52

You're telling me that was wrong, but I'm just gonna have to plead ignorance here.

    27:53-27:56

I didn't know that the thing that I was doing was wrong.

    27:58-27:58

    Yeah, you did.

    27:59-28:00

    God said it.

    28:01-28:02

    You have the information.

    28:03-28:13

Not just some ink and rice paper book, but a living, life-changing, cut you open and lay out your heart, word from God.

    28:15-28:18

So you have the command and you have the information.

    28:20-28:24

So finally, you have the appointment.

    28:26-28:28

You have the appointment. Look at verse 13.

    28:32-28:45

It says, "And no creature is hidden from His sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account." Listen, you will give an account.

    28:48-28:49

We have to be clear here.

    28:51-28:55

When we talk about standing before God, we're talking about two different things.

    28:56-29:03

Because the Bible says standing before God is different for believers than it is for unbelievers.

    29:03-29:04

    Those are two different things.

    29:05-29:10

Listen, tune in, because I know so many Christians that mix this up, right?

    29:10-29:12

So standing before God for believers.

    29:15-29:22

Listen, you will stand before God and your works will be judged to determine your eternal rewards.

    29:23-29:26

    That's 1 Corinthians 3, that's 2 Corinthians 5.

    29:26-29:28

Write those down, read those, study those.

    29:29-29:31

That's like a whole sermon series.

    29:31-29:35

We're gonna have to do that someday, but not today.

    29:38-29:39

    Here's the short version.

    29:39-29:41

Believers, you will not be judged for your sin.

    29:42-29:43

You will not be judged for your sin.

    29:43-29:45

The Bible says your sin was taken away.

    29:46-29:48

God says, I will remember their sins no more.

    29:48-29:52

The Bible says there is now therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

    29:53-29:54

You will not be judged for your sin, believers.

    29:59-30:01

I've talked to so many Christians that think they will.

    30:02-30:08

Yeah, I've talked to so many Christians who are like, you know, when we're in line to get in heaven, don't stand behind me 'cause God's gonna, no, that's not biblical.

    30:13-30:15

Jesus bore your judgment on the cross.

    30:15-30:17

You know, we talk about the cross a lot around here, right?

    30:18-30:18

    Do you know why?

    30:20-30:22

Because that is where God punished your sin.

    30:22-30:24

That is the means by which your sin is taken away.

    30:26-30:36

So let's not undermine the promise and the work of Jesus Christ by giving some nonsense that believers have to answer for their sin before God.

    30:37-30:39

That's not what the Bible says.

    30:42-30:44

But unbelievers, I got a different story for you.

    30:47-30:53

Revelation chapter 20 tells us that your sin will be judged and sentence will be passed.

    30:54-31:00

And the sentence is an eternal residency in the lake of fire.

    31:03-31:05

And that's why the Hebrew writer gives us this warning.

    31:06-31:17

He says, "No creature is hidden from his sight." So look, you can fool your spouse.

    31:19-31:20

    You can fool your pastor.

    31:21-31:23

You can fool your small group leader.

    31:25-31:26

    You can fool your mom.

    31:28-31:29

    You can fool your boss.

    31:32-31:34

Because your heart is so deceitful, you can even fool yourself.

    31:35-31:38

But the truth is you will not fool God.

    31:41-31:44

Interestingly, you see this expression here in verse 13.

    31:44-31:59

It says, "All are naked and," look at this, "exposed to the eyes." This caught my attention because that phrasing was used in those days to refer to wrestling.

    32:01-32:04

Now, like, I don't mean like Hulk Hogan.

    32:06-32:09

I mean the fake wrestling, you know, that Greco-Roman fake stuff that they did.

    32:11-32:13

    Just seeing who's still listening.

    32:14-32:28

But this was actually a wrestling term, exposed to the eyes, and it spoke to when a wrestler had his opponent by the throat and had him in a position where he can't move, immobilized.

    32:31-32:36

And his point is this, you can't run from God.

    32:37-32:46

Sooner or later you're going to face Him and He's going to have you in a position where you're going to give an account.

    32:49-32:51

He's going to pin you and He's going to expose you.

    32:52-32:53

You think you're getting away with something?

    32:54-32:56

You think God's not going to know?

    32:57-32:58

You think you're not going to face Him?

    32:58-33:01

You have an appointment and you can't cancel it?

    33:02-33:03

The question is, are you ready for it?

    33:12-33:19

He will, on that day, lay out your heart.

    33:21-33:28

you're going to be revealed truly and totally to Him.

    33:30-33:40

God knows who you are, not who you say you are, or not who you've convinced Facebook and Instagram, what you want them to think you are.

    33:41-33:43

God knows what you really are.

    33:46-33:51

And in the end, all that matters Here's what God thinks about you.

    33:58-34:04

Once upon a time, Adam in the Garden of Eden sinned.

    34:06-34:11

And he ran and he hid from God, naked and ashamed.

    34:14-34:18

And you realize that story plays out in all of our lives.

    34:22-34:33

God finds us in the garden and the pretense is stripped away and we see ourselves for what we really are.

    34:36-34:48

And this is what is so glorious about the gospel because when we receive Jesus Christ, That sin and that guilt and that shame, it's all been taken away.

    34:51-34:54

So we can stand before God exactly as we are.

    34:56-34:57

    We have nothing to hide.

    34:59-35:00

    We have nothing to defend.

    35:03-35:04

We have no burdens to bear.

    35:06-35:09

    No shame, no guilt.

    35:12-35:17

Because Jesus removed all of that.

    35:18-35:24

And that is the rest that He provides.

    35:26-35:36

Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart.

    35:38-35:44

There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

    35:46-35:48

    Strive to enter that.

    35:50-35:51

    Don't miss it for anything.

    35:53-35:56

Would you pray with me please as our worship team makes their way forward.

    36:00-36:07

Father in heaven, Just simply ask that we would be a church that gets violent.

    36:09-36:11

    Certainly not against people.

    36:13-36:16

Not really one person, I guess, just we get violent with ourselves.

    36:19-36:23

And Father, your word tells us to bear fruit in keeping with repentance.

    36:24-36:34

So there's a word for those of us who do know you that we would violently repent, that we wouldn't make allowances for sin.

    36:37-36:39

but that we would deal with our sin harshly.

    36:44-36:46

God, I pray especially for those who don't know you.

    36:48-37:00

They've been sort of sitting on the sidelines, or I guess in our earlier analogy, where they're just standing in the Pittsburgh airport, watching the train pull up, and people get on and they think, well, maybe they'll get the next one.

    37:00-37:02

They just look too hard to get on that train.

    37:06-37:08

    You've told us to strive.

    37:10-37:33

So Father, I pray that as you grant repentance, that you would give people the faith to trust you, to believe in the promise of your rest, and to violently go after anything in their lives that they know either you are calling them to or you are calling them to stop doing.

    37:35-37:40

Father, let your spirit manifest that striving in all of us.

    37:43-37:46

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Hebrews 4:11-13

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What does it mean to “strive to enter that rest”? What exactly is “striving”? Give some examples of violently repenting and violently having faith.

  3. How does God’s Word “discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart”?

  4. How do you convince someone in sin that their heart is deceiving them regarding that sin?

Hebrews chapter four, are you there?

    00:51-00:59

Many years ago, I would get frequent calls from some collection agency.

    01:00-01:06

And they said, "You are default on your student loans." And I said, "No, actually my student loans are paid off.

    01:06-01:16

They've been paid off for years." And they kept calling back, they kept calling back and they would get nastier and nastier and nastier every time.

    01:16-01:23

And I remember the last time they called me, the lady said, you know, you're defaulting your student loans.

    01:23-01:25

I said, that can't be true, mine are paid off.

    01:26-01:34

And she said, you understand this is gonna go against your credit record, and this is gonna be damaging to you financially.

    01:34-01:36

And I said, well, I don't know what to tell you.

    01:36-01:38

I said, but my student loans are paid off.

    01:39-01:43

And then she said something that I thought was quite strange.

    01:44-02:02

She said, "Sir, do you realize that there are 163 Jeffrey S. Millers in the state of Pennsylvania?" And I said, "No, but do you think there's a chance you got the wrong one?" Silence, silence.

    02:04-02:12

But you know, when you're so emotionally invested in an argument and you can't back out, she was still in sort of that mode.

    02:12-02:17

And she was like, "Well, if you don't mind "having your credit damaged, then you just don't pay it.

    02:17-02:21

"Okay, that's up to you." And then she hung up and I didn't hear from them after that.

    02:24-02:27

And you're like, "Why are you telling us this story?" Here's why.

    02:29-02:31

We're gonna look at a passage today.

    02:32-02:36

And you're going to be tempted to be like that person that called me.

    02:37-02:51

Because maybe you have a strong belief about something and you've had a strong belief about something and even though you've been shown something different, it's kind of hard to back out of what we've strongly believed about something.

    02:51-02:56

And that's why we wanna stop and pray, because look, my opinion doesn't mean anything.

    02:58-03:00

And quite honestly, neither does yours.

    03:01-03:03

The only opinion that really matters is God's opinion.

    03:04-03:06

So we wanna stop and just bow our heads and pray.

    03:07-03:11

And I want to ask that the Lord would open our hearts up to receive His word.

    03:12-03:17

for what it is, and I would ask that you would please pray for me to be faithful to communicate it.

    03:17-03:19

    Alright? So let's pray.

    03:22-03:25

Father, we believe that Your Word changes lives.

    03:25-03:35

And this particular passage won't just change one corner or aspect of our lives.

    03:35-03:40

This particular passage can change our mode of living.

    03:41-03:44

if we will open our hearts and minds to receive it.

    03:46-03:48

So speak to us today through your word, Father.

    03:51-03:54

And thereby be greatly glorified, we pray in Jesus' name.

    03:55-03:58

And all of God's people said, Amen.

    03:58-03:59

    Hebrews chapter 4.

    04:00-04:03

We started this theme last week.

    04:04-04:07

This message actually starts in chapter 3.

    04:08-04:10

We kind of have a little inception thing going here.

    04:10-04:17

I'm giving you a message that God gives us in Hebrews, quoting David in Psalms.

    04:18-04:36

And he was talking about something that happened back in Moses day during the Exodus. And this is the message. Do not harden your heart. Israel constantly They protested God.

    04:37-04:38

    Constantly complained.

    04:38-04:40

    Never thankful for anything.

    04:42-04:43

    And they never repented.

    04:43-04:49

And his point here is Israel demonstrated a complete lack of faith in God.

    04:50-04:58

God therefore said, "They are not going to enter My rest." Meaning, they are not going to enter the promised land.

    05:01-05:02

This is a message for you, church.

    05:06-05:11

The rest in the promised land, you see, it's a picture of salvation.

    05:13-05:19

And the message is simply this, don't miss what God has for His people.

    05:20-05:21

    That's the message.

    05:21-05:24

God has something glorious for you.

    05:24-05:25

    Don't miss it.

    05:29-05:38

Because the mark of someone with real faith, a genuine Christian can be defined a lot of different ways according to God.

    05:38-05:40

We're using a lot of different pictures.

    05:41-05:44

You know, as Ashley talked earlier about being a child of God.

    05:45-05:49

You know, the Bible talks about us as the church being God's household.

    05:49-05:53

And there's so many images in God's Word that describes that relationship.

    05:54-06:03

But this one in particular is the picture of entering God's rest.

    06:05-06:06

That's what we're gonna talk about today.

    06:09-06:10

And you're like, okay, what is it?

    06:12-06:14

    What is God's rest?

    06:14-06:14

    What is that?

    06:16-06:23

It is so misunderstood from Jesus' day until today.

    06:25-06:26

    So misunderstood.

    06:28-06:32

And somebody's like, "I got this, Pastor Jeff. I know what the Sabbath is.

    06:34-06:41

The Sabbath is Sunday." And then there's somebody that thinks they're a little more enlightened on it.

    06:41-06:45

And they're like, "No, no, no. Let me explain it to you.

    06:47-06:55

The Sabbath is actually the seventh day of the week, so technically the Sabbath is Saturday." Well, like what's the answer?

    06:58-06:58

    It's neither.

    07:01-07:02

    And it's both.

    07:06-07:07

    It's actually it's every day.

    07:10-07:12

Like, what are you talking about?

    07:12-07:13

Well, let's see what the Bible says.

    07:14-07:18

On your outline, if you're taking notes, which we always encourage, what is God's rest?

    07:18-07:19

That's what we're gonna be looking at today.

    07:19-07:20

    What is God's rest?

    07:21-07:24

And then I guess a more important question is, am I living in it?

    07:24-07:25

    So what is God's rest?

    07:26-07:29

You have to start here because this is where the text takes us.

    07:29-07:32

Number one, you will have no rest without faith.

    07:33-07:41

Okay, so as we're talking about rest, don't get too excited unless you're willing to receive it by faith because there is no rest without faith.

    07:43-07:46

All right, look at Hebrews 4.1.

    07:46-07:51

It says, "Therefore," again, this is flowing right from what we talked about last week.

    07:51-08:04

"Therefore, while the promise of entering His rest still stands, let us fear, lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it." Stop there.

    08:06-08:07

    He's talking about fear.

    08:07-08:09

    Obviously here, he's addressing unbelievers.

    08:10-08:14

    Look, believers have no fear.

    08:15-08:16

    We have nothing to fear.

    08:16-08:22

If you're a true child of God, born again, you have nothing to fear.

    08:23-08:25

    So obviously he's addressing unbelievers.

    08:26-08:31

He's saying if you're hardening your heart, as he talked about in the previous passage, he says you should fear.

    08:31-08:33

This isn't something you want to take lightly.

    08:33-08:36

This isn't something you want to roll the dice on.

    08:40-08:42

This isn't something you want to say, yeah, I hear what you're saying and I'll repent later.

    08:43-08:44

We talked about that last week.

    08:44-08:46

It's the worst thing you can say.

    08:46-08:47

    I'll repent later.

    08:48-08:49

    No, you won't.

    08:50-08:51

    You'll harden your heart.

    08:52-08:52

    Look at v. 2.

    08:53-08:58

It says, "For good news came to us just as to them.

    08:59-09:10

But the message they heard did not benefit them because they were not united by faith with those who listened." Do you see his point?

    09:11-09:14

Hearing and knowing the message is not enough.

    09:17-09:20

Church, hearing and knowing the message is not enough.

    09:21-09:23

And his point here is like, look, it wasn't for the Israelites, right?

    09:23-09:25

    They heard the message.

    09:25-09:27

And you could say they even believed.

    09:28-09:35

In the sense that they saw the promised land, and I think they even wanted to enter it.

    09:38-09:40

But they didn't have the faith to do it.

    09:42-09:43

You see, that's his point here in verse 2.

    09:43-09:49

Faith is more than knowing and agreeing, it's acting upon what you know and agree with.

    09:49-09:50

    That's the difference.

    09:52-09:56

Put it this way, I used to live in Ohio.

    09:58-10:03

And during my years in Ohio, I got a lot of speeding tickets.

    10:05-10:06

    I'm not proud of that.

    10:07-10:08

just telling you how it is.

    10:09-10:10

I got a lot of tickets.

    10:10-10:12

Like how many tickets did you get?

    10:12-10:13

Well, let's put it this way.

    10:16-10:29

When I moved back to Pittsburgh, I got a like a Hallmark card from the Ohio Department of Transportation that says we're going to miss you and we wanna thank you for your years of faithful support.

    10:31-10:34

Not really that part, but I got a lot of tickets.

    10:35-10:48

And again, I'm not proud of that, but it was a season of my life where I was just in a hurry and I had places to be.

    10:50-11:02

And just imagine I get pulled over for speeding, the police officer comes up to the window and I roll it down and I say, I'm just gonna cut you off right here, officer.

    11:03-11:10

Because look, I know all of the motor vehicle laws in this state.

    11:11-11:14

I've studied the laws and I know them.

    11:15-11:18

And I'll tell you what else, officer, I even agree that they're reasonable.

    11:20-11:25

And officer, I know that people should not be doing 90 through here.

    11:26-11:28

So listen, officer, you can't punish me.

    11:29-11:34

You can't write me a ticket because I have all the information.

    11:38-11:40

    So are we good, officer?

    11:41-11:42

What do you think he's going to say?

    11:44-11:45

He's going to say, no, we are not good.

    11:48-11:54

He might actually make me get out of the car and walk on a line or touch my nose or say the alphabet backwards, if you know what I mean.

    11:57-12:01

You see the point. Knowing the information actually makes you more accountable.

    12:02-12:04

Knowing the information makes you more responsible.

    12:05-12:07

Knowing and doing are two different things.

    12:07-12:13

And listen, believing in God and having faith in God are two different things.

    12:15-12:16

That's what we saw with Israel.

    12:16-12:25

"Israel, do you believe that God is going to give you the promised land?" "Yes, let's go!" Okay, now go in there and drive out those inhabitants.

    12:26-12:31

and they're like, "Um, let's go back to Egypt." That's not what faith looks like.

    12:33-12:34

You know what faith looks like?

    12:34-12:35

    Faith looks like this.

    12:37-12:44

If this is what God said, I'm trusting him and I'm moving forward based on this.

    12:44-12:45

    That's what faith looks like.

    12:46-12:47

So do you really have faith?

    12:49-12:55

I would just say, we'll find out when God's word tells you to do something that you don't wanna do.

    12:55-12:57

That's when you find out if you have faith.

    12:59-13:00

    So what is rest?

    13:02-13:07

Oh, he gets this out of the way, reminds us there's no rest without faith, right?

    13:09-13:11

But here's, that was all introduction.

    13:12-13:12

    We're not counting that.

    13:13-13:15

Towards sermon time, here's the sermon right here.

    13:16-13:17

Rest is not about a day.

    13:19-13:20

    Rest is about relationship.

    13:22-13:23

    Look at verse three.

    13:25-13:31

Okay, like I said, I know a lot of people have different ideas, beliefs, understand it.

    13:31-13:33

I just want you to see what God's word says.

    13:33-13:40

Verse three says, for we who have believed, enter that rest.

    13:42-13:46

As he has said, as I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest.

    13:47-13:51

Although his works were finished from the foundation of the world.

    13:51-13:52

    Stop there.

    13:52-14:00

It says in verse three where he says, "We who have believed enter that rest." That tense is right now.

    14:00-14:06

In other words, he's saying believers are in the rest of God right now.

    14:06-14:07

    That's what he's saying.

    14:08-14:15

If you believe in Jesus, by faith, receiving God's promises, right now you live in God's rest.

    14:18-14:23

And I want you to take note over and over as we go through this passage, God calls it his rest.

    14:24-14:24

    It's God's rest.

    14:25-14:26

    God says, it's my rest.

    14:26-14:27

    It's not a rest.

    14:29-14:30

    It's not their rest.

    14:30-14:33

    God calls it God's rest.

    14:33-14:38

It's the rest of God's finished work.

    14:38-14:39

    That's what it is.

    14:39-14:41

You're like, well, what is that?

    14:41-14:43

I'm so glad you asked because that's where he goes next.

    14:43-14:44

    Look at verse four.

    14:45-14:55

He says, "For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way." And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.

    14:57-15:05

And again, in this passage, he said, "They shall not enter my rest." What's he talking about?

    15:06-15:06

    Stop there for a second.

    15:06-15:08

He's taking us back to creation.

    15:09-15:11

Do you remember the creation account?

    15:11-15:14

God created the world according to God's word.

    15:14-15:16

He created the world in six 24-hour days.

    15:17-15:18

And on the seventh day, what did he do?

    15:19-15:19

    Say it.

    15:20-15:21

    He rested, right?

    15:21-15:22

    Why did he rest?

    15:23-15:23

    He was exhausted.

    15:24-15:27

I've been working six days, some of them were doubles and I got it.

    15:27-15:30

No, God didn't rest because he was tired.

    15:31-15:35

He rested first of all, because he was done.

    15:37-15:38

    But there's another reason.

    15:40-15:48

And that is this, God rested to show us the picture of the rest of faith.

    15:51-15:52

    What do you mean?

    15:52-16:14

Well, fast forward some years after creation, through the Exodus out of Egypt, remember God gave Moses the law, the commandments, and he instituted the Sabbath day, the seventh day, Saturday, for Old Testament Israel.

    16:17-16:24

God told Old Testament Israel, "Take a day to rest." And with the Sabbath, He gave one command.

    16:25-16:33

He says, "Don't work that day." That's the command, "Do not work that day." Because it was to be a picture of something greater.

    16:35-16:37

But as man often does, what did we do?

    16:37-16:38

    What did we do?

    16:38-16:39

    We turned it into legalism.

    16:40-16:41

    That's what we do.

    16:43-16:50

And in Jesus' day, if you read your Gospels, The religious Jews were obsessed with the Sabbath.

    16:51-17:04

And did you know that those religious Jews, they made hundreds of laws, man-made laws, that they said you had to keep in order to keep God's command to obey the Sabbath.

    17:05-17:07

    And it was crazy stuff.

    17:08-17:12

It was things like, you're not allowed to look in the mirror on the Sabbath.

    17:13-17:13

    Why?

    17:13-17:17

Because you might see a gray hair and you'll be tempted to pluck it.

    17:18-17:20

And that's work, and you just broke the Sabbath.

    17:22-17:23

That was one of their rules.

    17:23-17:24

    There were hundreds of them.

    17:24-17:28

My favorite was you weren't allowed to spit on the Sabbath.

    17:29-17:30

Do you know why you weren't allowed to spit?

    17:31-17:37

Because if you're loogie, hit the ground and move the piece of dirt, that's considered plowing.

    17:38-17:42

And you just worked on the Sabbath and you violated God's law.

    17:45-17:48

There were so many of these goofy rules that they instituted.

    17:50-17:56

And you're like, "But we don't do those things today." Really?

    17:58-18:00

Because we were the same church.

    18:02-18:08

There are whole denominations and churches built around like the Seventh-day Adventists.

    18:08-18:09

    That's kind of their thing.

    18:10-18:14

But even some quote, "Ultra conservative churches." They're out there.

    18:14-18:18

"You don't wash the car on Sunday." You know anybody like that?

    18:18-18:19

    Are you that guy?

    18:19-18:34

"You don't wash the car on Sunday." Or, "You don't mow the grass on Sunday." And there are some even today that insist that you have to keep the Sabbath because that makes God happy.

    18:36-18:37

Now listen to me very closely.

    18:40-18:44

Taking a day to rest is a great principle.

    18:44-18:46

And I encourage everybody to do that.

    18:47-18:49

You should take a day to rest.

    18:50-18:59

To unwind, to be with your friends and family and do things you enjoy, and certainly worship and fellowship with the Lord.

    19:00-19:02

You should take a day of rest.

    19:03-19:17

And really the only thing the New Testament says about the Sabbath day, is that we're not supposed to judge those who believe differently about that than we do, right?

    19:18-19:23

So look, if you're like, "Hey, on Sunday I don't ever cut the grass," hey, I respect that.

    19:25-19:26

    And I don't judge that.

    19:29-20:32

But when it's about legalism, it's about rules when it's about I do this because this is what makes God happy what you're doing is focusing on the shadow and not the substance and we so often mistake the two I read an account this week from a preacher that I follow He told the story of this teenage girl who was in this church service and they were having communion that particular day and she ducked out and she went and committed some sin. He didn't specify what sin it was but she left to specifically commit some sin and he found out about it later somehow and he talked to the girl about it. He goes, "Did you leave church to go do this sin?" and And he said, "How could you do that?" Do you know what her response was?

    20:32-20:33

    "Hey, hey, it's okay.

    20:34-20:35

    I didn't take communion.

    20:36-20:41

So it's okay." You see the problem with that?

    20:43-20:44

    See, what is communion?

    20:45-20:51

Communion is to be this, we're sharing the life of Jesus together.

    20:53-21:06

and to deny that by going out and willfully sinning, but to be diligent in the way that you observe the sacrament, that's an insult to God.

    21:07-21:08

It's like you found some kind of loophole.

    21:09-21:10

    Like, really?

    21:11-21:12

Did you get one over on God?

    21:15-21:16

    No, you did not.

    21:18-21:24

You see, what he's saying here in Hebrews 4, Rest was pictured in the Sabbath.

    21:25-21:30

Rest was pictured in Israel's entrance into the promised land.

    21:33-21:39

But to live in that rest every day is to keep the Sabbath as God originally intended.

    21:41-21:42

    Look at verse six.

    21:45-22:26

It says, "Since therefore it remains for some to enter it." and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience again he appoints a certain day today saying through David so long afterward in the words already quoted today if you hear his voice do not harden your hearts look at verse 8 look look look he says for if Joshua had giving them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on.

    22:29-22:30

    You see that?

    22:30-22:48

He's saying if rest was fulfilled by Joshua and that next generation of Israelites that went with him into the promised land, he said if Joshua fulfilled that, then David wouldn't have repeated this command so much later.

    22:50-22:52

to not harden your hearts and forfeit God's rest.

    22:53-22:54

    You see that?

    22:55-22:58

If Joshua fulfilled it, why is David still talking about?

    23:02-23:06

In other words, like the Sabbath day, the promised land was a picture.

    23:07-23:10

And if that was enough, God wouldn't have said what he says in verse nine.

    23:11-23:18

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God.

    23:20-23:22

A rest remains for God's people.

    23:24-23:25

    So what is it?

    23:26-23:26

    All right.

    23:26-23:30

I see you're talking a lot about rest, but what is the rest?

    23:33-23:33

    Here it is.

    23:33-23:34

    Verse 10 is the rest.

    23:36-23:37

    That was all intro.

    23:39-23:39

    Here it is.

    23:40-23:49

Look, for whoever has entered God's rest, has also rested from his works, as God did from his.

    23:50-23:51

    There it is.

    23:53-23:55

This was God's intention from the beginning.

    23:57-24:01

It's from this, that man fell.

    24:04-24:08

And it is to this, that man has been restored in Jesus Christ.

    24:11-24:17

And unless you get this, you're not going to have assurance that you belong to Jesus.

    24:19-24:20

    So what is it?

    24:22-24:23

    It's simply this.

    24:26-24:46

From the moment you're born, growing up, developing, relating to people, you have been brainwashed into thinking that in order to have somebody's approval, you must perform for them.

    24:47-24:47

    Right?

    24:50-24:51

I mean, we learn that in school, don't we?

    24:52-24:57

If I want the teacher to be happy with me, I have to perform well.

    24:58-25:02

And we graduate and we get a job, What do we learn at this job?

    25:03-25:08

If I want my boss to be happy with me, I have to perform well.

    25:09-25:14

Unfortunately, some people grow up in a home where kids grow up thinking that.

    25:14-25:21

If I want mom and dad to be happy with me, I have to perform well.

    25:22-25:27

And it goes on and on in every single arena of life.

    25:28-25:31

And what we do is we take that mindset to God.

    25:31-25:36

And we say, if I want God to be happy with me, I have to, what church?

    25:37-25:38

    I have to perform.

    25:38-25:39

    I have to do things.

    25:40-25:42

And then God's going to look down and say, I'm happy with him.

    25:42-25:47

And if I mess up, God's up in heaven, just like, I can't believe you, I'm so disappointed in you.

    25:48-25:53

And we have that mindset of approval from performance.

    25:53-25:55

    We take that to God.

    25:57-25:59

I have to perform to make God happy.

    25:59-26:01

God's happy with me when I behave.

    26:02-26:04

He's mad at me when I don't behave.

    26:04-26:06

    I have to do good.

    26:06-26:08

I have to be good in order to go to heaven.

    26:10-26:15

And these are the works that we are called to rest from.

    26:17-26:22

It's stopping your own religious efforts that you think is making God happy with you.

    26:24-26:29

You see, when you came to Jesus Christ, and I love hearing testimonies.

    26:29-26:34

I love hearing testimonies because they're all so different, but they're also all the same.

    26:36-26:40

Because every testimony has this element.

    26:42-26:43

You stop trying to save yourself.

    26:45-26:48

You stop trying to be good enough to go to heaven.

    26:49-26:57

you rested from the work to earn your salvation, and you instead rested on His.

    26:59-27:01

That's how you came to Christ.

    27:01-27:02

    I'm done trying.

    27:02-27:03

    I can't try.

    27:03-27:04

    It'll never work.

    27:04-27:06

    I can't do enough.

    27:06-27:08

I'll always fail on my own.

    27:08-27:16

I'm a miserable sinner that deserves God's worst, but instead God gave me His Son, which I do not deserve.

    27:16-27:18

    but that demonstrates God's love.

    27:19-27:21

He provided for me what I can't do for myself.

    27:21-27:25

I'm throwing myself at the mercy and grace of God.

    27:25-27:29

That's how a Christian comes to be.

    27:30-27:32

That's how a sinner comes to receive Christ.

    27:32-27:36

And that is exactly why Paul says in, what is it, Colossians 2.6.

    27:36-27:37

Look at this, look at this.

    27:39-27:50

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, So walk in Him." You see that?

    27:51-27:56

As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.

    27:57-28:06

Just as you were totally dependent on Jesus to save you, that same dependency and that same mindset is how you live in His rest.

    28:09-28:37

And at this point I was like, "Man, I wish there was a way I could illustrate this." I'm like, "Is there a way that I could just sort of paint a picture to show you exactly what this looks like?" And then I was like, "God already gave us the perfect picture." The best illustration is the one that God gave, and it's marriage.

    28:39-28:41

Follow with me on this for a minute here.

    28:43-28:47

Marriage, biblically, you know what the purpose of marriage is?

    28:50-28:53

To have children. Now that's not the main purpose.

    28:53-28:55

That happens, but that's not the main purpose.

    28:56-29:02

Well, it's to find love. That's a purpose, but that's not the main...

    29:02-29:07

God. That's the purpose of marriage, is to glorify God. And how does that happen?

    29:08-29:30

Well, the Bible tells us the husband in the marriage relationship is supposed to represent Jesus, the servant leader pouring himself out for his bride. The husband represents Jesus. The wife is to represent the church, the submissive helper that comes and has this love relationship with the one who guides and protects.

    29:30-29:38

And the world is supposed to see the relationship that Jesus has with his church in a healthy marriage.

    29:41-29:49

So a healthy biblical marriage is this, two people enter a covenant of a love relationship.

    29:53-29:55

And see, that's what rest is.

    29:56-29:58

Let me put it this way, make it real personal.

    29:59-30:02

You know, my wife Erin, we've been married for 20 years.

    30:03-30:06

I don't know how she did it, but she's put up with me for two decades.

    30:10-30:12

But here's the thing with the marriage.

    30:13-30:16

    I don't have to earn her wife-ship.

    30:17-30:17

    Is that a word?

    30:18-30:19

    Wife-ship?

    30:19-30:20

    Somebody Google that real quick.

    30:22-30:23

    Wife-ship?

    30:23-30:24

    We'll go with that.

    30:24-30:26

    I don't have to earn her wife-ship.

    30:28-30:30

Could you imagine the stress of that every day?

    30:31-30:36

Waking up and going, "I've got to try to make Erin my wife today.

    30:36-30:37

I hope that I'm good enough.

    30:38-30:39

I hope that I'm charming enough.

    30:39-30:40

I hope that I'm funny enough.

    30:41-30:43

I hope that I look good enough." That never happens.

    30:43-30:56

But something, "I hope that I can do something to earn her acceptance so I can be her husband today." That would be a terrible way to live.

    30:57-31:19

day not knowing the status of our relationship? She's like, "You can be my husband today and maybe tomorrow. I'm not sure about this weekend though. That'd be a horrible way to live, wouldn't it? Just this constant like, "What are we gonna do to make her happy?" But let me tell you what actually happened.

    31:21-31:29

See, a little more than 20 years ago, Aaron and I entered a covenant before God.

    31:31-31:37

You see, and because we're in covenant, she is my wife.

    31:39-31:42

And we have this love relationship based on that.

    31:44-31:54

Now, yes, I strive to show her that I love her, but I do that from the position of the foundation of the covenant.

    31:57-32:00

And you see now it's resting in that.

    32:01-32:04

And it's loving her on that basis.

    32:05-32:12

And the truth is that makes me love her more because there's no condition.

    32:14-32:16

It's not we're married one day and not the next.

    32:18-32:19

She loves me one day and not the next.

    32:22-32:28

It's resting in a love that's not based on feelings, or circumstances, or performance.

    32:29-32:33

It's resting in a love that's based on covenant.

    32:35-32:40

So it is with those who have real faith in Jesus Christ.

    32:42-32:45

You see, you are in a covenant.

    32:48-32:55

And your love relationship with Jesus Christ functions totally in that context.

    32:56-33:05

Just as my relationship with Aaron functions totally in the context of marriage, your relationship with Jesus functions in the context of His covenant with you.

    33:05-33:06

    Do you see?

    33:07-33:08

    It's not your performance.

    33:11-33:11

    It's not your conduct.

    33:13-33:14

    And it's not your feelings.

    33:16-33:20

It's a loving relationship and a covenant relationship that Jesus Christ established.

    33:21-33:30

Therefore, you are free to live the life that He called you to and empowers you to, knowing that you are forever His.

    33:31-33:33

Your sin has been taken away.

    33:34-33:35

    His Spirit lives within you.

    33:35-33:40

You are His child, and nothing will ever change that.

    33:41-33:45

So you are free and you have rest.

    33:48-33:53

And Jesus wants you to live in that rest.

    33:56-34:07

So to try to reduce the Sabbath rest of God to one day a week of not cutting the grass, It's missing the reality.

    34:10-34:14

Because for born-again followers of Christ, every single day is the Sabbath.

    34:15-34:17

Because every day is living in His rest.

    34:18-34:20

I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please.

    34:23-34:35

As the worship team comes forward, you know, a lot of times when we preach up here, we want to leave you with something to do, right?

    34:35-34:38

think about this, or pray about this, or start doing this.

    34:42-34:43

I want to call you to action.

    34:46-34:50

This is a little different though, because I want to call you to...

    34:50-34:52

not to do something, I want to call you to stop doing something.

    34:55-35:02

With your heads bowed, I just want to ask you, are you somehow still striving?

    35:04-35:07

thinking that you have to earn God's approval.

    35:09-35:23

And with all the urgency I can muster, I just want to encourage you to let today be the day that you embrace the rest that He gives to those who have true faith in Him.

    35:25-35:32

God is not calling you to work or earn or go through red tape or jump through hoops.

    35:34-35:40

God is calling you to do one thing, and that is to trust Him.

    35:41-35:44

To believe that He made the provision for you.

    35:46-36:01

When His Son was nailed to that cross, and when His Son resurrected from that grave, He did that to make the provision for you, so that you could enter the rest of a loving covenant relationship.

    36:04-36:09

Father in heaven, there is nothing new under the sun.

    36:09-36:13

And we're so much like the people even in Jesus' day.

    36:13-36:16

We just get all backwards about this stuff.

    36:16-36:23

And we start worshiping the pictures instead of worshiping the substance.

    36:24-36:30

The things that the picture should be pointing us to, the reality of Jesus Christ, Father, bring us there.

    36:33-36:47

And certainly, Father, as Your Word tells us, we don't judge those who believe differently about the Sabbath, but we are concerned with people that think that the Sabbath is something that we do to make You happy, because that's an insult.

    36:49-36:57

You made that provision for our sin to be taken away, for us to stand guiltless before You, for us to be adopted children of God.

    36:57-37:00

You made that provision through the death of Your Son.

    37:02-37:06

You've given us the promise of eternal life through the resurrection of Your Son.

    37:06-37:26

And I pray, Father, today, You would grant repentance and grant true faith for the person that's sitting here or watching this or listening to this later that has been striving, wondering, "Am I acceptable to God?" You have done that work, and You've called us to Your rest.

    37:28-37:31

May we enter that rest today, Father, we pray in Jesus' name.

    37:31-37:32

    Amen.

Hebrews 3, if you're not there, please turn there.

    00:52-00:55

I'd just like you to pray for me, please.

    00:56-01:00

And I'm going to pray for you as we turn to God's Word together.

    01:02-01:05

Father in heaven, we are just now turning to Your Word.

    01:07-01:15

We've already spent so much time in worship, in music, and around Your table, and in prayer, and in fellowship.

    01:15-01:23

And right now, Father, You've heard from us, and now we want to hear from You.

    01:25-01:39

I just pray, Father, that this Word would grab every heart in this room, every heart listening to this stream, podcast, later, whatever, Father.

    01:39-01:41

Take every heart and wrestle us to the ground.

    01:44-01:46

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

    01:48-02:08

Hebrews 3. If you decide to go on a mission trip, you'll get on an airplane, unless you go on the West Virginia trip, but you'll get on an airplane and you'll see a very strange custom that takes place on the airplane.

    02:08-02:21

You know the one I'm talking about, the flight attendant gets up and walks you through the "in case the plane is going to crash into the ocean" speech. You know what I'm talking about?

    02:23-02:37

And I've flown a lot, but I gotta tell you that scene always fascinates me. Because you have somebody standing up giving a life and death message.

    02:38-02:41

And as you look around, what are people doing?

    02:42-02:49

Leafing through their magazines, starting to put your earphones in, and lay back, get ready for their rest, or they're eating something.

    02:52-02:57

And I always think, what if we really were in an emergency?

    02:58-03:00

Would anybody here know what's going on?

    03:04-03:16

And I'm convinced that that scene in the airplane is such a graphic picture of the church in the United States.

    03:17-03:19

Because do you know what you have in the church in the United States?

    03:20-03:50

You have somebody getting up like the flight attendant, going through the motions and giving the message, no passion, no care, knows what needs to be said, and just goes through the motions with incredible apathy and indifference, communicating a life-and-death message to a group of people who can't wait until it's over so they can get on with their business.

    03:50-03:54

That's the picture of our church in this country.

    03:56-03:57

    Apathy.

    03:59-04:01

    Just, when are we done?

    04:03-04:11

And as we turn to this passage here in Hebrews, you know, we go to God's Word.

    04:11-04:15

If God says something once, you should listen, right?

    04:16-04:22

If God says something twice, you should sit up and write it down.

    04:24-04:30

If God says something three times, you should make it your singular focus.

    04:30-04:38

"Okay, okay, all right, I'm listening." What should you do if God says something four times?

    04:39-04:57

Your attitude should be, "Nothing else in the world matters except this, because God wants me to hear something." And four times in this passage, Hebrews 3-4, God has the same message over and over and over and over, and here it is.

    04:57-05:11

God says, "Do not harden your heart." It's the most dire warning, because it carries the greatest consequences.

    05:11-05:22

And I've got to tell you, church, if the Lord would appear to me and say, "Jeff, you've got one more sermon to preach, and then you're gone to heaven." This would be it.

    05:25-05:39

You would say, "Jeff, what's the most important message the church needs to hear?" I would say, "This has to be it, because of the urgency that the Lord communicates to us in His Word." Do not harden your heart.

    05:41-06:04

Look at chapter 3, picking up in verse 7, it says, "Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says today, If you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness." Like, "Man, you seem pretty fired up about this.

    06:04-06:12

What does it mean to harden your heart?" It means to spiritually become calloused.

    06:13-06:14

    Right?

    06:15-06:34

I'm sure many of you, like me, on your hands have callouses that I could take a pin and stab myself and puncture the skin all over, but there are certain parts of my hand I can't get a pin through there, no matter how hard I push, because it's so hard and calloused.

    06:34-06:47

Right? And that's what it means to harden your heart, is that you have, over time, made your heart so hard that it's unable to be punctured spiritually.

    06:47-06:51

And in that picture, the needle represents the gospel.

    06:53-06:55

So you see, the problem over time isn't with the gospel.

    06:56-06:57

    That's not the problem.

    06:57-07:01

The problem is you have hardened yourself so much against it that it can't puncture.

    07:02-07:03

That's what it means to harden your heart.

    07:06-07:19

You're like, "Well, how does that happen?" Is there anybody here, a show of hands, that would say, "You know what, Pastor Jeff, I have a hard time saying no to people." Anybody here have a hard time saying, "I see a few hands going up.

    07:19-07:25

It's hard for me to say no to people." Well, here's something about that.

    07:26-07:30

The more you do, the easier it gets.

    07:32-07:33

    And this is the warning.

    07:36-07:58

The more you say no to God, and truly believing Him, The more you say no to God in truly following Him, in truly living a Spirit-filled, God-glorifying life, the more you say no to God, the harder your heart becomes.

    07:59-08:02

And as I just said a minute ago, it has the greatest consequences.

    08:03-08:08

Why? Because a hard heart is unable to believe.

    08:12-08:18

This is the tragedy of hard-heartedness, is that you put yourself in a position of hopelessness.

    08:18-08:19

    That's bad enough.

    08:20-08:25

What makes it worse is you don't care.

    08:27-08:31

So, on your outline today, hard-heartedness.

    08:34-08:38

I didn't know what else to label this. I just said why you absolutely must pay attention.

    08:40-08:43

    You absolutely must pay attention.

    08:45-08:46

The first of all, letter A, pay attention.

    08:47-08:49

We're dealing with a recurring problem.

    08:52-08:55

Pay attention, we're dealing with a recurring problem.

    08:57-09:08

Now we already read verses 7 and 8, but just to give you a quick snapshot here, verses 7 through 11 in this passage actually come from Psalm 95, verses 7 through 11.

    09:08-09:24

and this is like an inception moment, but the Hebrew writer is quoting David from Psalm 95, who is taking Israel back to Moses' day when they were wandering through the wilderness.

    09:26-09:41

So you see what's happening here, as I'm telling you what the Hebrew writer told his church, what David told Israel, what happened in Moses' day, "Don't do what they did." And you know the story, right?

    09:41-09:44

Go back to the story of the Exodus.

    09:44-09:49

Remember, Israel had moved to Egypt because of a famine.

    09:49-09:52

And while they were in Egypt, lots of babies were being born.

    09:52-09:54

It was a lot like Harvest Bible Chapel, actually.

    09:54-09:56

Lots of babies were being born.

    09:56-10:03

So many babies that the Egyptian leaders were like, "There's a problem here.

    10:03-10:10

If we get attacked by another nation, and the Jews that are here are like, "Hey, we're helping the enemy." The Egyptians are like, "We're done.

    10:11-10:18

There are so many of them. If they join on with the enemy, they will squash us." So the Egyptians enslaved the Israelites.

    10:21-10:23

Well, to put it lightly, the Lord wasn't a fan of that.

    10:24-10:26

So God raised up Moses to deliver them.

    10:27-10:29

Well, Pharaoh wasn't a fan of that.

    10:29-10:32

So he's like, "I'm not letting you go." You know the story, right?

    10:32-10:34

    Exodus, God sent ten plagues.

    10:35-10:38

And the last plague was the death of the firstborn.

    10:39-10:41

And that's where the Passover comes in.

    10:41-10:48

The blood of the spotless lamb, if you're covered under that, the angel of death will pass over.

    10:49-10:59

And at that point, Beirut was like, "You can go, I'll help you pack." And you know the story, and gave pursuit.

    11:00-11:04

Red Sea, God parted it for the Israelites, closed it over the Egyptians.

    11:06-11:16

And at that point in the story, I would expect like this joyful trip to the promised land.

    11:17-11:32

I would expect them to be like skipping and singing, like, "We're going to receive the promise of God!" and just high fives and rejoicing and...

    11:32-11:34

You read the account, right? Is that what happened?

    11:37-11:42

They refused to believe God at every single stinking turn.

    11:43-11:45

    Everything God did for them.

    11:46-11:47

    Everything He did.

    11:49-11:50

    They refused to believe.

    11:51-11:54

That's why verse 8, we've got to get this context here.

    11:54-12:04

Verse 8 says, "On the day of testing in the wilderness..." You're like, "What testing?" Well, there's two that need mentioned very quickly.

    12:04-12:06

One of them is in Exodus 17.

    12:07-12:14

Remember, Israel found themselves in a position where there was no water where they were, and they immediately went into faithless mode.

    12:14-12:16

Is God with us or not?

    12:19-12:19

    What?

    12:21-12:24

Legs, Red Sea, is God with us or not?

    12:26-12:27

    What's the matter with you?

    12:28-12:30

Then fast forward to Numbers 14.

    12:30-12:34

You remember the story of the twelve spies sent to spy out the land?

    12:34-12:36

And ten came back, and they're like, "We're doomed!

    12:37-12:47

We're like grasshoppers compared to them!" And then two of them, Joshua and Caleb, were like, "Let's go! It's going to be awesome!" and fear spread.

    12:49-12:54

And instead of having the faith to go take what God provided for them, they shrunk back.

    12:55-13:05

And God says, "Okay." And He made them wander in the wilderness until that whole generation, people over the age of 20, they all died out.

    13:05-13:11

And the only two from that generation allowed to enter the Promised Land were those two faithful spies, Joshua and Caleb.

    13:12-13:16

God says, "They refuse to believe Me." So they're not going to enter the land.

    13:17-13:18

They're not going to receive the promise.

    13:21-13:24

    Now look, you've read this.

    13:24-13:27

Some of you could get up here and tell the story.

    13:28-13:35

So I don't need to just get up here and rehash Bible accounts.

    13:37-13:38

    Here's the real issue today.

    13:39-13:45

You need to ask yourself, "Have I hardened my heart?" We're not just examining people on a page.

    13:45-13:47

There's a point that God told us this.

    13:47-13:49

He wants us to look here, okay?

    13:49-14:01

He wants us to look at this story and examine ourselves, so you need to ask, "Have I hardened my heart?" You're like, "Well, how does that happen?" A couple of things from this passage.

    14:02-14:04

First of all, do I demand from God?

    14:05-14:07

Number one, do I demand from God?

    14:08-14:09

    Look at verse 9.

    14:12-14:36

Again, quoting Psalm 95, He says, "Where your fathers put Me to the test, and saw My works for forty years." So you have to ask yourself, "Do I demand from God?" Because if you live that way, You're putting yourself in a horrible situation.

    14:39-14:40

You know, we read the story.

    14:41-14:47

We go through Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

    14:48-14:54

We read this and we're like, "What were they thinking?" What a bunch of knuckleheads. What were they thinking?

    14:56-15:01

They saw God's works every single day.

    15:01-15:02

    Think of what they saw.

    15:03-15:06

Manna from heaven, water from a rock.

    15:07-15:11

There was a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire.

    15:11-15:14

It was God's glory that actually led them.

    15:15-15:17

And the Bible says their clothes didn't wear out.

    15:18-15:20

Parents, wouldn't you like to know how that happened?

    15:21-15:23

It was a miracle, but wouldn't you like that for your kids?

    15:24-15:26

    Their clothes didn't wear out.

    15:28-15:29

    And what was their response?

    15:30-15:35

Over and over and over and over, they put God to the test.

    15:36-15:39

Like, what does it mean, "they put God to the test"?

    15:39-15:41

It means this, listen, you've got to hear this.

    15:43-15:47

Putting God to the test is when you demand that God proves Himself to you.

    15:47-15:48

    That's what that means.

    15:49-15:52

You demand that God proves Himself to you.

    15:52-15:52

    That was Israel.

    15:53-15:56

"Prove you exist, God! Prove you care, God!

    15:56-16:00

Prove that you're gonna help me, God." Now listen, we all want a glimpse of God at work.

    16:00-16:02

That's why this church was planted.

    16:02-16:05

That's all we ever wanted was to see God's hand at work.

    16:05-16:06

    I'm not talking about that.

    16:06-16:08

We should want to see God at work.

    16:08-16:10

That's not what I'm talking about here.

    16:10-16:12

    Testing is beyond that.

    16:13-16:25

Testing is, "God, you have to constantly prove yourself to me." Because when you look at Israel wandering through the wilderness, as soon as God made provision, as soon as he made provision, They started complaining again.

    16:26-16:29

"Yeah, but what about this? Yeah, but what about that?

    16:30-16:34

Did you bring us out here to die, Moses?" What?

    16:37-16:38

    They were never satisfied.

    16:40-16:42

    They were never thankful.

    16:44-16:48

And they, listen, church, they made an issue out of everything.

    16:50-16:53

God made perfect provision, do you remember?

    16:53-17:16

And they're like, "Do you remember back in Egypt, the meat that we had?" How about, "Do you remember back in Egypt, you were slaves?" Or my favorite, when they were like, "Do you remember back in Egypt, the leeks?" I'm like, "I'm calling baloney on that." Nobody ever got excited about a leek, ever.

    17:18-17:23

But somehow, we have awfully short memories, don't we?

    17:26-17:36

Instead of being grateful worshippers, they acted like spoiled toddlers for 40 years.

    17:39-17:49

Church, listen, when you demand that God performs, It has to be my way. It has to be according to my timetable, God.

    17:50-18:01

When you are constantly complaining, you never take the time to thank God, or to praise God in front of others for all that He's provided you.

    18:01-18:04

When you live in that mode, do you know what you're doing?

    18:05-18:07

You're putting God to the test.

    18:08-18:09

    It's a terrible idea.

    18:12-18:15

If you're real, God, God, if you're real, prove yourself.

    18:15-18:18

God, if you care, do this.

    18:18-18:21

God, you need to prove yourself to me, God.

    18:21-18:26

Show me that demanding from God never takes you anywhere good.

    18:29-18:35

Right now, somebody's like, yeah, I hear what you're saying, Jeff, but look, you mentioned the manna, the water from a rock and all of that.

    18:35-18:38

Look, Jeff, do you know how many miracles they saw?

    18:41-18:53

And my response to that would be, "Okay, well, what have we seen God do?" Because I would suggest to you that we've seen God do way more than they ever did.

    18:57-19:00

Because the evidence is in regarding Jesus Christ.

    19:03-19:05

See, they lived before all that.

    19:08-19:14

We are blessed to live on this side of history and see God became a man and lived here.

    19:14-19:18

    And He did these miracles.

    19:18-19:24

And He taught with these words of authority unmatched by anybody.

    19:26-19:32

And He was crucified exactly as He said He would.

    19:33-19:38

And then He rose from the dead exactly as He promised.

    19:39-19:47

So, have we seen less than the Israelites? Or have we seen more?

    19:50-19:51

    Here's how faith works.

    19:52-20:06

Faith isn't man saying, "God, show me and I'll believe." Faith is God saying, "Hey, you believe and I'll show you." So demanding from God, you harden your heart.

    20:07-20:09

How do you harden your heart?

    20:09-20:14

Number two, ask yourself this, "Do I persist in sin?" Look at verse 10.

    20:16-20:24

It says, "Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said..." Look at this, two things.

    20:25-20:29

"They always go astray in their hearts.

    20:30-20:35

They have not known my ways." It says God was provoked.

    20:36-20:37

    Literally, that's aggravated.

    20:40-20:42

So how about interpretation by voting?

    20:43-20:45

Aggravating God. Good idea or bad idea?

    20:48-20:49

    Bad idea.

    20:51-20:52

God was aggravated over their sin.

    20:53-21:03

They're persistent, unrepentant, nobody tells me what to do, I'm doing what I want to do, Sin, unrepentant sin.

    21:06-21:09

You're like, "What kind of sin?" Well, it's sinning in two ways, right?

    21:10-21:11

    It's commission and omission.

    21:12-21:14

God says, "Don't do that," and we do it.

    21:15-21:19

Or God says, "This is something you should do," and we refuse to do that.

    21:19-21:20

    That's what we see here.

    21:21-21:22

First of all, do you see that in verse 10?

    21:22-21:27

It says, "They always go astray in their heart." Is that you?

    21:29-21:31

I hear this all the time.

    21:32-21:35

You'd think being a pastor I would never hear this, but I hear this all the time.

    21:35-21:39

"Oh, I know the Bible says this, but..." But what?

    21:41-21:47

"But I'm doing what I want to do." I know I'm not supposed to do this, but I'm going to do it anyways.

    21:50-21:51

I shouldn't be in this relationship.

    21:53-21:55

    I shouldn't have this addiction.

    21:56-21:59

    I know I shouldn't talk like that.

    22:00-22:04

    But, but, but, it persists.

    22:06-22:06

    You're hard-hearted.

    22:08-22:08

    So what happens?

    22:09-22:14

Sin repeated over time, never repented.

    22:14-22:19

It gets easier and easier and easier to say no to God.

    22:22-22:23

You know what it sounds like in your ears?

    22:25-22:27

Because at first the Holy Spirit is shouting at you.

    22:30-22:34

And you persist in doing it your way, then all of a sudden it sounds like the Holy Spirit is whispering.

    22:36-22:37

And then you don't hear anything at all.

    22:39-22:42

You realize the Holy Spirit's voice hasn't changed.

    22:44-22:45

    You've hardened yourself.

    22:48-22:50

You're making it so that you can't hear what He's saying.

    22:52-22:53

That's what happens when you persist in sin.

    22:55-23:03

If you know where you need to repent - and by the way, I know that you do, if there's somebody here dealing with stuff, and I know many of you are.

    23:05-23:07

    You know what that is.

    23:08-23:13

And if you refuse to repent, you're making yourself calloused and you're hardening your heart.

    23:14-23:18

The second thing here regarding sin, he says they always go astray, and then he says they've not known my ways.

    23:20-23:25

I've not known my ways." That's more than knowing about them, right?

    23:26-23:30

That's more than having some verses memorized.

    23:30-23:33

I'd do pretty good on New Testament and Jeopardy or whatever.

    23:33-23:37

Knowing God's ways is living according to His ways.

    23:37-23:41

It's just simply saying this, "I know what God wants me to do, but I'm not going to do it.

    23:41-23:45

I know God wants me to receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

    23:45-23:50

I know God wants me to get real with Him to make Him the priority of my life.

    23:51-23:53

But I'm not going to do that. I'm not ready to do that.

    23:54-24:04

I know God wants me to pray, and God wants me to give, and God wants me to get involved in ministry, and to take my spiritual walk seriously, but I'm not going to do that now.

    24:06-24:07

    They're hardening your heart.

    24:10-24:16

It's a dangerous condition to be in, because not only are you far from God, She don't care.

    24:18-24:19

    I don't care.

    24:20-24:23

And I care less and less, the more I say no.

    24:24-24:26

    Do I persist in sin?

    24:28-24:33

You absolutely must pay attention, because let it be, the consequences are tragic.

    24:34-24:36

The consequences are tragic. Look at verse 11.

    24:38-24:48

"As I swore in my wrath, they shall not enter my rest." Swore in my wrath." This isn't God losing His temper.

    24:49-24:50

Okay, you know, God doesn't do that.

    24:51-24:52

    God had a bad day.

    24:52-24:53

    He kicks the dog.

    24:54-24:55

    He slams the door.

    24:55-24:56

    God doesn't do that.

    24:58-24:59

I think this is two things.

    24:59-25:02

This is a promise and it's a description of their condition.

    25:03-25:08

God here is saying, "I provided everything that they need and they just won't get on board.

    25:10-25:11

    They won't do it.

    25:11-25:16

They refuse, so they're never." They're never going to get it.

    25:18-25:19

    What is the rest?

    25:20-25:22

    What is he talking about?

    25:23-25:25

They shall not enter my rest.

    25:25-25:26

    What's the rest?

    25:27-25:29

The rest was the promised land, right?

    25:29-25:30

    It was Canaan.

    25:31-25:35

That generation literally wasn't allowed to step foot into that land.

    25:35-25:37

They shall not enter my rest.

    25:37-25:41

It's resting from the wandering and the toil.

    25:41-25:44

This is God's provision for His people.

    25:45-25:47

And here's where it has to land in your heart.

    25:48-25:49

This is a picture of salvation.

    25:52-26:00

This rest, this entering the promised land, it's no more wandering, no more striving in the wilderness of struggling.

    26:00-26:04

It's coming to Christ to experience God's promise for His people.

    26:05-26:06

    That's what His rest is.

    26:08-26:10

saying, "I'm a child of God.

    26:11-26:13

I don't have to earn my salvation.

    26:14-26:16

    Heaven is my future.

    26:17-26:18

    God is with me now.

    26:18-26:19

    He's guiding me.

    26:19-26:21

    He's providing for me.

    26:23-26:26

My sin and shame and guilt are taken away.

    26:26-26:30

I'm in fellowship with God and with His people.

    26:33-26:35

Everything ultimately is going to be okay.

    26:35-26:36

    I have peace.

    26:38-26:39

    and I have hope.

    26:41-26:42

    Everything's going to be great.

    26:44-26:45

    You see, that's rest.

    26:46-26:49

    That's living in rest.

    26:54-27:01

And you see, when you're hard-hearted, because you're living for your sin, and you're disregarding God, do you know what you're doing?

    27:02-27:03

    You're forfeiting all of that.

    27:04-27:09

"God, I know this is what You have for Your people." I'm bowing out of it.

    27:12-27:30

Listen, if you're hardening your heart, if you're constantly testing God, if you're persisting in unrepentant sin, and you will not come to Christ and allow Christ to do the work that He does in you, you're never going to know what God has for His people.

    27:31-27:32

You're never going to know that.

    27:34-27:38

Not in this life, and not when you leave this life.

    27:41-27:43

    You will never have rest.

    27:45-27:51

Those are the consequences of hardening your heart, and refusing to truly come to Jesus.

    27:53-27:54

    Never have rest.

    27:55-27:56

So you've got to pay attention.

    27:59-28:09

I suppose I could stop here, but I'm not going to, because...

    28:09-28:12

Let her see there's something you can do about it.

    28:12-28:14

There's something you can do about it.

    28:16-28:19

What, you think I just put on my shiny coat to tell you the bad news?

    28:20-28:22

There's something you can do about this.

    28:25-28:27

The first one is this, we've got to watch each other's backs.

    28:30-28:32

Look at verses 12 and 13.

    28:34-28:45

It says, "Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God.

    28:46-29:06

But," - here it is, look that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin." So the first thing we need to do is we need to be begging each other to get on this.

    29:07-29:12

Like, "Look, be serious about your walk with Christ. Get real about your walk.

    29:12-29:28

It has to be your priority. What are you doing to pursue Christ?" We have to be on each other about this because, as he tells us here, Sin will deceive you. Sin will make a fool out of you.

    29:30-29:35

Because sin is such a big fat liar.

    29:39-29:56

Sin gets you to think, "Oh this thing will make me happy. This thing that I'm involved. It's not such a big deal. Sin is such a liar. But listen, you know the biggest lie that sin tells?

    29:58-30:14

Here's the biggest lie that sin tells. You ready? It's, "You can repent later. You can repent later." Like I know I'm involved in some stuff now, but I'm gonna repent later.

    30:16-30:17

Some of you know what I'm about to say.

    30:17-30:20

We used to do prison ministry, Mark and I and some others.

    30:20-30:24

We used to go into the Butler County Prison every week to preach.

    30:24-30:26

And I remember, I'll never forget this one man.

    30:27-30:44

He raises his hand, he goes, "I have a question." Like, "What's your question?" He said, "So, if I'm like on my deathbed "and I pray to receive Jesus right there "when I go to heaven." Come on, I knew where this was going.

    30:44-30:47

    I said, yes, that's true.

    30:48-30:56

If somebody prays to receive Jesus on their deathbed like the thief on the cross, last moments of life, yes.

    30:56-30:57

    Promise of heaven.

    30:57-31:12

And I remember this young man, he said, he goes, "I'll just do that then." And I said, "No, you won't." He's like, "What do you mean, no, I won't?" And I said, "Well, there's a couple of problems with your plan.

    31:15-31:16

I said, let me point out the first one.

    31:18-31:20

I said, you do realize that not everybody gets a deathbed, right?

    31:23-31:31

I know that if we could all write our story, you realize every single person in this room and watching this stream, we'd all have the same ending to our story, wouldn't we?

    31:31-31:50

We'd be a hundred and five years old, we're laying in bed, our family is around us, And we just close our eyes and go to sleep, and the angels escort us to heaven.

    31:52-31:52

    So peaceful.

    31:54-31:56

Isn't that the story that you would write for yourself?

    31:56-32:00

Do you realize that doesn't happen very often?

    32:03-32:11

There's things like heart attacks and car accidents and tragic things.

    32:12-32:19

So I told this man, I told him some stories of people that I knew who died very suddenly, very unexpectedly.

    32:20-32:28

I'm like, "So if that's your plan, it's a bad plan, because not many people have that." I said, "But there's actually a worse problem with your plan.

    32:30-32:39

That you will not receive Jesus on your deathbed if that's your plan." I said, "Here's the worst problem." I said, "Do you know what that means?" That means every day of your life from now...

    32:39-32:42

I said, hypothetically, let's give you your deathbed.

    32:42-32:49

Hypothetically, let's pretend that you do make it all the way to the whole deathbed Hallmark card thing.

    32:49-32:51

And let's pretend that you do.

    32:51-32:52

I said, you know what that means?

    32:53-32:59

That means every day of your life until then, you're saying no to Jesus.

    33:01-33:02

I said, I'm gonna tell you something.

    33:03-33:11

If that's you, when that deathbed time comes, you're not going to be interested in Jesus at all.

    33:12-33:15

Because you've just spent decades saying no to Him.

    33:17-33:18

You're not even going to want to hear.

    33:20-33:23

That's why he says today. Today. Today.

    33:24-33:26

When's a good time to get on track with God?

    33:26-33:28

There is only one time. And it's called today.

    33:29-33:31

    What about tomorrow? Today.

    33:33-33:37

today only lasts as long as your heart is sensitive to the Word of God.

    33:37-33:40

So listen, that's why we do small groups here.

    33:41-33:44

It's not a fad, it's not a way of marking attendance.

    33:44-33:46

Small groups, here's what you need to do.

    33:46-33:49

Listen, there's such a strong warning here, so you've got to listen.

    33:51-33:52

    Be in a small group.

    33:53-33:53

    That's not enough.

    33:54-33:56

You actually have to show up.

    33:58-34:00

    And that's not enough.

    34:01-34:03

You actually have to be involved.

    34:05-34:08

Church, you need to lovingly be in each other's faces.

    34:09-34:12

Sometimes you have to have the Dutch Uncle Talks, you know what I mean?

    34:14-34:16

    Constantly pushing people to Christ.

    34:17-34:19

You see someone in sin, you need to call that out.

    34:20-34:25

Like, "Hey, hey, you're falling for a lie of sin." Come on, come on.

    34:25-34:27

I'm not going to let you do that.

    34:29-34:31

We need to stop allowing complaining.

    34:33-34:35

We need to set a culture of giving thanks to God.

    34:36-34:38

Church, we need to watch each other's backs on this.

    34:41-34:43

You're like, "Well, how do we know we're on track?

    34:45-34:47

How do we know that we're not being deceived?

    34:48-34:52

How do we know that we're not hard-hearted?" Well, look at verse 14.

    34:53-35:06

"For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the Do you want proof of your salvation? Do you want confidence in your salvation?

    35:08-35:11

It's not what you did 20 years ago.

    35:12-35:17

Well, I know I'm a Christian because I raised my hand or filled out a card or walked an aisle 20 years ago.

    35:17-35:30

That's not the proof. The evidence is, "What are you doing today? What are you doing right now?" Now, the proof of what he calls sharing in Christ is persevering, right?

    35:30-35:33

It's are we abiding until today?

    35:35-35:37

So we've got to watch each other's backs.

    35:38-35:46

And then finally, this is the most important part, saves it for last.

    35:49-35:50

I need you to tune in, I know.

    35:51-35:52

I know we had a lot happening today.

    35:55-35:56

But you've got to tune in, this is the most important part.

    35:56-35:57

    You ready?

    35:58-36:00

Don't think it can't happen to you.

    36:03-36:09

Because it is at this point in the sermon that many people are like, "Yeah, yeah, people need to hear this.

    36:10-36:17

Oh, it's a shame, it's a shame, my neighbor Phyllis ain't here to hear this." You need to hear this.

    36:20-36:23

Don't think it can't happen to you.

    36:23-36:27

And that's his point here as we close this passage.

    36:27-36:31

    Look at verse 15.

    36:32-36:44

He says, "As it is said today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." There it is again.

    36:45-36:49

He says, "For who were those who heard and yet rebelled?

    36:52-36:54

Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses?

    36:55-36:58

And with whom was he provoked for forty years?

    36:58-37:01

Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell into wilderness?

    37:02-37:04

And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest?

    37:05-37:07

But to those who were disobedient?

    37:08-37:17

So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief." Real quick, he asked five questions, and there's an obvious point here, right?

    37:19-37:20

    Obvious point.

    37:20-37:26

This terrifying warning that God was giving, it wasn't directed at the pagans.

    37:29-37:34

God wasn't giving this warning to the Jebusites or whatever.

    37:36-37:42

He's like, "Who was God talking to?" He's talking to the Israelites under Moses.

    37:44-37:45

    This is directed at Israel.

    37:46-37:51

It was the people who saw the plagues and the Red Sea and the Manna, and all of that for 40 years.

    37:54-38:11

In other words, this is directed at people that were right in the middle of some of God's most amazing works, and they saw it all, and instead of getting on board and worshiping, They chose their sin over God.

    38:14-38:19

Why is He reminding us that this happened to Israel?

    38:20-38:23

Because what He's saying is, "Look, this can happen to you, church.

    38:24-38:30

This can happen to you." Some people have been sitting in church for years.

    38:32-38:38

You've been seeing the baptisms, you've been hearing about prayers being answered.

    38:38-38:50

There are people that have been miraculously healed in this church by God's power, and you're watching all of this, and your response is just...

    38:52-38:53

    (Sigh)

    38:56-39:07

Some people are raising their hands saying, "Hallelujah." And you're raising your hands going, "Meh." You see, this is the scariest thing, I've got to tell you.

    39:08-39:16

The scariest thing is to stand up and preach a message like this, and to look out and see people not care.

    39:18-39:24

There are people that are hearing this right now, that are like, "It seems like we're going along today.

    39:25-39:32

Where do I want to go for lunch after this?" That's horrifying to think that that's happening.

    39:34-39:35

    But it is.

    39:38-40:02

And all I can say is this, as our worship team makes their way up, all I can say is this, if there is any stirring within you today, if the Holy Spirit is speaking to you through the Word of God, and you have any sense of that at all today, you've got to act on that today.

    40:05-40:11

Because if you don't, it is going to be so much easier to say no to Jesus next week.

    40:13-40:25

And the week after, it's going to be so much easier to say no to Jesus then, until eventually, you don't care at all.

    40:28-40:30

    And you'll probably stop coming.

    40:32-40:34

Here's the bottom line right now in your life.

    40:36-40:38

I want you to think about your walk.

    40:38-40:41

You're not thinking about your spouse or your neighbor that coerced.

    40:41-40:44

I just want you to think about your heart right now.

    40:46-41:00

And you have to ask yourself right now, in your personal spiritual life, are you in a season right now where you feel like you are drawing closer to God, or where you are drifting further away from Him?

    41:01-41:02

Because it's one of the two.

    41:05-41:05

    Which is it?

    41:07-41:08

I'd like you to bow your heads.

    41:10-41:19

You know, in verses 18 and 19, he equates unbelief with disobedience.

    41:21-41:35

So I want you to know that if you're sitting here saying, "I agree with everything you're saying. I believe all this." You're living a life of disobedience, what you're saying is, "I really don't believe what God said." So with your heads bowed, you're just examining yourself right now.

    41:35-41:39

And I want to ask you, in what area are you being called into obedience?

    41:41-41:42

    You know what that is.

    41:42-41:46

You've known this whole time I've been speaking what God is calling you to do.

    41:46-41:48

    You know what it is.

    41:51-41:53

For you, is it a sin to stop?

    41:56-42:00

Is it a step of obedience to take?

    42:03-42:04

Maybe some of you, it's baptism.

    42:05-42:11

We have four people, as Pastor Taylor said, four people are stepping up, making their public profession of faith.

    42:11-42:13

Maybe you've been disobedient in that area.

    42:14-42:15

Like, "I know I should be baptized.

    42:15-42:18

I know I'm supposed to make my public profession of faith.

    42:18-42:21

I know God commands this. I'm not doing it." Well, you need to do it.

    42:23-42:26

If you know exactly what God's calling you to do, it has to happen now.

    42:29-42:35

Because if you harden your heart, You're going to lose the ability to believe.

    42:38-42:42

And you're going to miss out on everything God has for His people.

    42:46-42:53

But Father in heaven, as we bow ourselves before You, this is such a sobering warning from Your Word.

    42:56-43:02

In this short passage, in the one we're looking at next week, We see four times.

    43:04-43:06

    Almost like you are pleading.

    43:08-43:13

Do not harden your heart, because God, You know that's where we go.

    43:16-43:26

I pray, Father, for the power of Your Spirit and Your Word to call us to faith.

    43:28-43:37

Father, there's somebody here, and I know there are people here, but you need to make this step.

    43:39-43:42

Some step of obedience, some step of repentance.

    43:42-43:49

They've been putting it off, and they've been believing the lie of, "I'll just repent later. I'm going to get my act together later.

    43:49-43:54

I'm going to seek God later." That's never going to happen.

    43:56-43:59

Father, I pray today, today is the day of repentance.

    43:59-44:11

Today is the day when serious, real business is done with You, so that we are a people who represent You.

    44:13-44:17

We are a people who glorify You.

    44:20-44:28

To the praise of Your name, we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

All right, so you open your Bibles to Hebrew chapters three verses one through six.

    00:52-00:53

Now there's a little more people here.

    00:53-00:55

Who wants to admit they stayed up till midnight last night?

    00:56-00:57

All right, who wasn't able to make it?

    00:57-00:58

    Who just couldn't do it?

    00:59-01:02

Who has kept up past midnight because of the fireworks?

    01:03-01:05

I mean, come on, by 2 a.m. it's like, you're not done yet, like really?

    01:06-01:07

    You're still doing that?

    01:08-01:09

    Well, who's tired today?

    01:10-01:10

I know a lot of us are probably tired.

    01:10-01:19

I know I'm not feeling that well this morning, but I am so excited to preach the word to you, So I'm gonna take some time to go before the Lord.

    01:20-01:25

I'm gonna ask you to pray for me, and I'll pray for you as well, all right?

    01:26-01:27

    Amen.

    01:28-01:33

You know, I was thinking this past week, as human beings, we love to watch competition unfold, don't we?

    01:33-01:37

We love to see people go head to head and see who'll come out on top.

    01:38-01:40

This really plays out in sports, doesn't it?

    01:41-01:49

We live in Pittsburgh, so the Steelers, the Penguins, the Pirates, Maybe not the Pirates that much in recent years, aren't able to compete.

    01:49-01:51

But we love to watch our teams compete, right?

    01:52-01:56

And maybe you're a really serious Pittsburgh fan.

    01:56-01:58

You love to watch the Steelers.

    01:58-02:00

Whenever they lose, it ruins your entire day.

    02:01-02:03

And when they win, it makes your day.

    02:04-02:17

Maybe you take this love of athletics more personally, and you love to compete with your friends at the local YMCA, and you act a lot younger than you actually are, which leads to a lot of injuries and frustrations, right?

    02:17-02:19

Or maybe you have a fancy football team.

    02:19-02:20

    Anybody have a fancy football?

    02:21-02:22

    Not many of you, wow.

    02:23-02:24

    I'm really surprised by that.

    02:26-02:30

Or maybe you're one of those people who gets really serious about card games or board games.

    02:31-02:33

I see some of you looking at each other like, yeah, that's you.

    02:34-02:35

And you get mad whenever you lose.

    02:35-02:40

You get bent out of shape when people aren't taking the game seriously enough, right?

    02:42-02:45

But this love of competition goes even farther back than that.

    02:46-02:47

    It goes back to childhood.

    02:47-02:52

I remember as a kid arguing with my friends about which superhero was the best.

    02:52-02:54

Who would win in a fight?

    02:55-02:59

Can Batman actually beat any superhero or super villain because he's the smartest and most prepared?

    03:00-03:04

Can Hulk and Superman, if they came together, who would win in a fight?

    03:05-03:08

Can Wolverine's claws cut through Captain America's shield?

    03:08-03:09

    Will we ever find out?

    03:10-03:10

    Or how about this one?

    03:11-03:13

I bet my dad could beat up your dad.

    03:15-03:15

    Really?

    03:16-03:20

Like our dad's these macho powerlifters who can grind each other into dust, right?

    03:22-03:29

You know, back in first century Israel, there wasn't much competition or argument about who the greatest and most important Old Testament figure was.

    03:29-03:31

    Hands down, it was Moses.

    03:31-03:33

    He was the uncontested champion.

    03:33-03:36

He led God's people out of slavery in Egypt.

    03:36-03:39

He received the 10 commandments from God and his angels.

    03:40-03:45

He saw the glory of God and this experience made his face shine.

    03:45-03:48

He wrote the first five books of the Old Testament.

    03:49-03:53

Who could possibly be greater than Moses?

    03:53-03:57

Who could possibly compete with his list of achievements?

    03:59-04:02

Well, this is an easy answer according to the author of Hebrews, it's Jesus.

    04:03-04:05

    Jesus is greater.

    04:05-04:06

    Jesus is more important.

    04:07-04:09

    Jesus is worthier.

    04:09-04:10

    It's not even a contest.

    04:11-04:14

Jesus is the clear winner in this competition.

    04:15-04:20

Now, as 21st century Christians, we hear this and we think, we hear, okay, Jesus is greater than Moses.

    04:20-04:21

    You're thinking, yeah, no duh.

    04:21-04:22

    I already believe that.

    04:23-04:24

No need to convince me any further.

    04:24-04:26

Should I just pack up my Bible and go home?

    04:28-04:32

But to the Jewish audience who read this letter around 2000 years ago, this was a really big deal.

    04:33-04:39

This is a massive hurdle to get over to truly love, serve, and follow Jesus.

    04:41-04:49

In order to be a genuine follower of Christ, you must believe with your whole heart that no one could possibly be superior to him.

    04:51-05:00

So we're gonna unpack Hebrews chapter three, verses one through six this morning, and discuss how Jesus is greater than Moses and how this should affect us from one day to the next.

    05:01-05:08

We're gonna spend this entire message focusing on the supreme worth, the supreme glory of Jesus Christ.

    05:09-05:15

And I know of no better way to kick off 2023 than to fix our eyes on Jesus.

    05:17-05:25

This morning we're gonna learn that Jesus is worthy, number one, of my constant attention, of my constant attention.

    05:27-05:28

Let's read verse one of chapter three.

    05:29-05:38

"Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, Consider Jesus the apostle and high priest of our confession.

    05:39-05:50

As Pastor Jeff taught us in his first sermon in Hebrews, this letter was primarily written to Jewish believers who are experiencing persecution and hardship for their faith in Jesus Christ.

    05:52-05:56

And many scholars describe this book as more of a sermon than a letter.

    05:57-06:07

Unbelievers are exhorted to finally trust in Jesus Christ rather than try to earn their salvation by following a list of good works and good deeds.

    06:07-06:11

Believers are encouraged to find their ultimate hope in Jesus.

    06:12-06:19

And the author of Hebrews begins this section by reminding his readers of who they are and what they have been called to.

    06:20-06:25

He says that they are holy brothers who share in a heavenly calling.

    06:26-06:28

    That means not suffering alone.

    06:28-06:30

    They're not suffering in isolation.

    06:31-06:40

They are a part of a massive family that's being held together by a heavenly Father who has made them sons and daughters and spiritual siblings with one another.

    06:41-06:47

They've not only been adopted into God's family, but they've been set apart for a special mission and calling.

    06:47-06:54

They are no longer just citizens of this earth, but they are citizens of heaven.

    06:56-07:04

You know, if we're honest, we'd admit that as Christians, It's so easy to go about our week and totally forget about who we really are in Christ.

    07:06-07:10

It's easy to lose sight of our heavenly identity and our heavenly calling.

    07:10-07:14

You have to understand that you are not primarily an employee or a boss.

    07:15-07:19

You're not primarily a mother or a father, a husband or a wife, a citizen of this country.

    07:20-07:24

You are primarily a son or daughter of Almighty God.

    07:24-07:29

You are a citizen of heaven who is called to be an agent of change on this planet.

    07:30-07:37

Everything in this world can be taken away from you except for that, except for this identity.

    07:38-07:44

Your heavenly position is secure because it's held by the only one who is strong, who is mighty.

    07:46-07:47

    Your position is secure.

    07:50-07:53

We so often fix our eyes on anything, anyone but Jesus.

    07:54-07:57

we can take him and what he has given us for granted.

    07:58-08:01

We take our eyes off of him and focus on our circumstances.

    08:03-08:07

We take our eyes off of him and focus on what God hasn't given us.

    08:07-08:08

    We focus on our frustrations.

    08:10-08:16

We take our eyes off of him and focus on all the bad things that are happening to us.

    08:18-08:21

No wonder so many Christians are miserable and unhappy.

    08:23-08:28

No wonder so many Christians feel so weak and unable to do what God has called them to do.

    08:29-08:37

They have taken their eyes off of the prize and disconnected their hearts from the source of love, joy, peace, comfort, and strength.

    08:38-08:39

    Is that you this morning?

    08:41-08:43

Have you taken your eyes off of Jesus?

    08:46-08:49

Maybe you feel like Peter in Matthew 14 when he's walking on the water.

    08:50-08:52

Everything was going great at first, He's like a human jet ski.

    08:53-08:54

    And then what happens?

    08:55-08:55

    What does he do?

    08:56-09:02

He takes his eyes off of Jesus and focuses on the wind and the waves and he's beginning to sink.

    09:04-09:12

Like Peter, have you chosen to take your eyes off your Lord and Savior and focus on the raging storm around you?

    09:14-09:21

Are you sinking into the waves of your worries, your anxieties, your doubts, and your insecurities.

    09:23-09:28

If that's you, please listen to and act upon the command in verse one of our passage this morning.

    09:28-09:33

Consider Jesus the apostle and high priest of our confession.

    09:34-09:35

    Consider Jesus.

    09:36-09:37

    What does that mean?

    09:38-09:42

Well, it means that you continually give Jesus your full attention and mental energy.

    09:42-09:48

You use the mind that he has given you to read, study, memorize and meditate upon his word.

    09:49-09:51

You are to be a student of Jesus Christ.

    09:53-09:57

You know, no other human being on this planet knows my wife better than I do.

    09:57-10:02

If we all took a pop quiz about the life and likes of my wife, I would crush you all in that competition.

    10:02-10:04

I would get an A plus.

    10:04-10:05

You're thinking, well, good for you, Taylor.

    10:05-10:06

You know your wife better than I do.

    10:08-10:12

But let me ask you, do I know all there is to know about my wife?

    10:13-10:13

    I don't.

    10:14-10:18

She's a complex person who constantly surprises me.

    10:18-10:19

    My family's laughing right now.

    10:20-10:31

I should never settle for what I already know about Kate and think, "Eh, I know enough to skate by in this marriage." I should desire to know her better today than I knew her yesterday.

    10:32-10:36

In a much greater way, you should never settle for what you already know about Jesus.

    10:37-10:41

You should be hungry to get to know him more and more each day.

    10:42-10:49

Sadly, we can be content to rake through the leaves of scripture rather than dig down deep for the gold that is underneath.

    10:51-10:54

When it comes to Bible study, never settle for quick and easy.

    10:55-11:00

Becoming a student of God's word takes work, it takes effort, but it's so rewarding.

    11:02-11:07

If you need hope right now, consider Jesus and study why he is the greatest hope of all.

    11:07-11:15

If you need strength right now, consider Jesus and meditate upon his many examples of strength, of power under pressure.

    11:16-11:28

If you need freedom right now, consider Jesus and delve deep in the passages that promise deliverance from any temptation, from any sin pattern.

    11:31-11:39

According to the author of Hebrews, Jesus is worthy of our consideration and attention because he is the apostle and high priest of our confession.

    11:40-11:43

The word apostle means sent one.

    11:43-11:54

And God sent a lot of people throughout human history to accomplish his purposes, but Jesus is the ultimate apostle, the ultimate sent one, who is sent from heaven to earth.

    11:55-12:02

He is the perfect ambassador of heaven, who perfectly reflects the character and nature of God the Father.

    12:02-12:09

He is the ultimate high priest, who didn't just sacrifice an animal on the altar, but sacrificed his own life.

    12:10-12:11

    for the sake of sinners.

    12:13-12:16

His body was broken so that you could be made whole.

    12:16-12:20

His blood was poured out so that you could be washed clean of your sin and your shame.

    12:21-12:25

Who could possibly be worthier of your attention and study than Jesus?

    12:27-12:28

    Easy answer, no one.

    12:30-12:36

He is the answer to every single question that you have and the solution to every problem that arises.

    12:37-12:40

Keep your eyes glued to him and never look away no matter what.

    12:42-12:47

Secondly, Jesus is worthy of my constant honor and respect.

    12:47-12:49

Of my constant honor and respect.

    12:52-12:54

Let's continue on with verses two through four.

    12:54-12:56

Let me actually include verse one.

    12:56-12:57

It'll make a lot more sense that way.

    12:58-13:10

"Therefore, holy brothers, "you who share in a heavenly calling, "consider Jesus the apostle and high priest "of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house.

    13:11-13:20

For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself.

    13:21-13:26

For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.

    13:28-13:34

So the author of Hebrews throws around the phrase God's house a lot, and this passage in the verse is coming up.

    13:34-13:38

When you hear the phrase God's house, what's the mental picture that pops into your head?

    13:40-13:41

    The church building, right?

    13:41-13:47

It's the steeple roof with the cross on top, the wooden pews with hymnals in front of it, right?

    13:47-13:48

That's the mental picture that we have.

    13:49-13:52

But the Greek word for house in this passage is oikos.

    13:52-13:54

Not the yogurt, get the yogurt out of your head.

    13:56-13:57

    This means household.

    13:58-14:02

And all throughout the New Testament, this word is often used to refer to people.

    14:03-14:05

And this is the meaning of oikos in this verse.

    14:05-14:11

The author of Hebrews is talking about people and not a physical building or house.

    14:12-14:21

Back in his time, Moses was appointed by God himself to take care of God's chosen people, aka his house.

    14:22-14:26

Moses was faithful in his position, even though he stumbled, he messed up at times.

    14:27-14:34

But the author tells us that Moses is worthy of honor and respect for his faithful service to the Lord.

    14:35-14:38

But Jesus deserves even more honor.

    14:38-14:45

He deserves even more respect and glory than Moses because he is not just a servant in God's house.

    14:45-14:48

We're told that he is the builder of the house.

    14:49-14:53

Moses was just a member of the household that Jesus built.

    14:54-14:57

Jesus is the creator and sustainer of all things.

    14:58-15:01

So he is the one who built Israel into what it was.

    15:01-15:04

The church exists because of Jesus Christ.

    15:05-15:10

Without him, we would be lost and broken down bricks with no purpose, with no function.

    15:11-15:19

But because of Jesus, we are called living stones in 1 Peter chapter two, who are being built up into a spiritual house.

    15:20-15:30

With each person that Jesus saves, he keeps adding to this beautiful and awesome house that he is building to honor and glorify himself.

    15:31-15:33

He is the author of salvation.

    15:34-15:38

He's the one who holds us together as a spiritual family, as a spiritual household.

    15:40-15:43

We have to understand, this building is not the church.

    15:44-15:45

    We are the church.

    15:45-15:47

    We are God's house.

    15:47-15:59

We are God's people, and he is building us up into something awesome and glorious to point this community to the amazing glory, beauty, and grace of Jesus Christ.

    16:00-16:02

Church, we are here because of Jesus.

    16:04-16:06

We are here to glorify Jesus.

    16:07-16:09

Do we really believe that at the start of 2023?

    16:11-16:15

We are here to bring him great glory and honor.

    16:17-16:20

But how do we show him this honor and this glory that he deserves?

    16:21-16:24

Well, let's try to answer that question by answering another question.

    16:25-16:28

How do you show anyone honor and respect?

    16:28-16:31

Through what you say and what you do.

    16:32-16:34

Through what you say and what you do.

    16:35-16:38

We already talked about how we can glorify God with our minds.

    16:38-16:42

Yes, God wants our thoughts, but he also wants our words and our actions as well.

    16:42-16:44

    He wants all of us.

    16:45-16:58

You prove your respect for someone by how you treat them, how you speak to them and how you speak about them, how you treat them, how you speak to them and how you speak about them.

    16:59-17:01

Let's apply these three things to our relationship with God.

    17:02-17:07

Firstly, you prove your love for God by treating others with the respect that they deserve.

    17:08-17:16

The Bible is clear that you cannot say that you love God, but treat another person with hatred, indifference and disrespect.

    17:17-17:19

Those two things don't go together.

    17:21-17:29

You can say that you honor the Lord, but do you really if you're harboring hatred in your heart towards somebody else?

    17:31-17:35

Is there someone in your life right now, if you think about them, your blood begins to boil?

    17:36-17:40

You want nothing to do with them, you've pushed them away, you have hatred in your heart for them.

    17:42-17:51

How can we say that we love God and what he stands for if we don't open up our wallets to give to the cause of spreading the gospel in this community and throughout this world.

    17:52-17:58

How can we say that we respect God, but we let negativity rule in our hearts and constantly come out of our mouths?

    17:59-18:05

These inconsistencies are red flags that we need to constantly evaluate when they pop up.

    18:06-18:11

We're told in scripture to examine ourselves to see if we're in the faith and truly love the Lord.

    18:12-18:16

And the greatest way to do this is to examine how you treat those around you.

    18:16-18:18

How do you treat your family?

    18:18-18:27

How do you treat your friends, your coworkers, your acquaintances, your neighbors, and those who can't give you anything in return?

    18:29-18:34

Secondly, we improve our respect level for God by how we speak to him in prayer.

    18:36-18:40

Your prayer life either reflects a devotion to God or an obsession with yourself.

    18:42-18:47

You're probably used to getting book recommendations, but let me give you a book non-recommendation today.

    18:48-18:51

Some of you are hate reading, you're like, yes, finally, someone's telling me not to read.

    18:53-18:59

Years ago, the Family Christian Bookstore that used to be in Cranberry, and I came across a book that shouldn't have been there.

    19:00-19:05

And I was very tempted to buy this book just so I could burn it and scatter its ashes in a dumpster.

    19:05-19:06

Here's the book I came across.

    19:08-19:10

May I have your order, please?

    19:10-19:12

how to get what you want from God.

    19:15-19:17

Does anyone else see anything wrong with this title besides me?

    19:18-19:19

    Nobody?

    19:20-19:21

Please raise your hand if you don't like this title.

    19:22-19:23

Hey, good, that's good to hear.

    19:24-19:25

    It gets worse.

    19:26-19:27

I opened up this book and read a few pages.

    19:27-19:33

The author actually compares God to a waiter who takes our order, which is our prayers.

    19:34-19:38

And we can find certain ways to twist God's arm into giving us what we want.

    19:40-19:42

Now I think most of us agree that this is straight up garbage.

    19:42-19:44

We want nothing to do with this line of thinking.

    19:46-19:51

We reject this line of thinking with our minds, but we so often live it out in our hearts, don't we?

    19:52-19:54

We live it out in our prayer life.

    19:54-20:01

We can often treat God like he is a waiter and we get mad at him when he doesn't deliver the requests that we want.

    20:03-20:04

    It's so easy.

    20:04-20:11

It's so tempting to just rush into God's presence and rattle off a list of and then say a quick amen and then get out of there.

    20:12-20:20

Listen, sometimes something pops up and you should bring it to the Lord, bring him that request, you don't have that much time to pray, that's good and that's right.

    20:20-20:25

But if your prayer life is 100% request and nothing else, that's a problem.

    20:26-20:29

That shows a total lack of respect for the Lord.

    20:31-20:36

You need to spend time praising the Lord for who he is and what he has done for you.

    20:37-20:41

you need to make sure you're thanking him for all the good gifts that he gives to you.

    20:42-20:54

Yes, God's a loving father, and he wants you to approach him with boldness and confidence, but he's also a sovereign and all-powerful king who wants you to approach him with reverence and respect.

    20:54-20:57

You can do both of these things at the same exact time.

    20:59-21:04

Finally, we can show the Lord honor and respect by how we talk about him with others.

    21:05-21:08

If you truly love someone, We can't help but talk about them.

    21:09-21:14

Sorry to pick on you again, Kate, but I love my wife, so I love to talk about her with other people.

    21:15-21:18

I love to talk about how funny, how special, how beautiful she is.

    21:19-21:27

We all love to talk about the things that we enjoy, whether it's a hobby like hunting, fishing, maybe your hobby is shopping.

    21:27-21:30

I don't know what your hobby is, but we enjoy talking about these things, right?

    21:31-21:35

And we find someone who shares that passion, we latch onto them like leeches.

    21:37-21:41

You know, I'm a big movie buff like I've told you before, and I love to quote movies and TV shows.

    21:41-21:47

Just ask Pastor Jeff and other staff members if we can get through a meeting without me quoting something, right?

    21:48-21:55

But in a much greater way, if we truly love the Lord and wanna bring him great glory, we should desire to talk about him.

    21:57-22:01

It should be on our heart to invite people to church and tell them about Jesus.

    22:01-22:09

It should be on our heart to talk about the things with the Lord, with our family, and our friends, and have deep theological conversations.

    22:10-22:14

Again, it should be on our heart to share the message of the gospel.

    22:16-22:26

I know that sharing your faith and telling about Jesus can be scary, it can be intimidating, but the joy of faithfully sharing the love of God should far outweigh the fear of man.

    22:28-22:33

I've come across so many people who say, "Yeah, Taylor, I love God, I'm a Christian, "but my faith is very personal to me.

    22:34-22:35

not only to talk about other people.

    22:36-22:37

You ever come across someone like that?

    22:39-22:41

Do you find anything like that in scripture though?

    22:41-22:43

Thumbs up or thumbs down for that line of thinking?

    22:43-22:45

    Massive thumbs down.

    22:45-22:53

Yes, our faith should transform us personally, impact us personally, but it should transform how we speak publicly.

    22:54-23:01

For the genuine follower of Christ, hiding the message of the gospel and keeping your faith a secret isn't an option.

    23:02-23:07

Jesus is too awesome, he is too glorious, he is too worthy for you to stay silent.

    23:09-23:17

As you read the New Testament, it becomes very clear that anything and everything that we do either honors or dishonors Jesus.

    23:19-23:21

And Paul speaks this in Colossians 3:17.

    23:21-23:36

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, "do everything in the name of Jesus Christ, "giving thanks to God the Father through him." I want you to take a minute to evaluate your words and actions over this past week.

    23:38-23:40

Think about the things that you've said.

    23:41-23:42

Think about the things that you've done.

    23:45-23:49

Have you been consistently glorifying Jesus and shining a spotlight onto him?

    23:52-23:54

Or have you been robbing him of the glory that he deserves?

    23:57-23:58

    Think about that.

    24:08-24:11

Jesus takes his glory extremely seriously, and so should we.

    24:13-24:18

This should be our supreme concern, our supreme focus above all else.

    24:20-24:25

Finally, Jesus worthy of my constant perseverance and faithfulness.

    24:27-24:30

of my constant perseverance and faithfulness.

    24:33-24:34

Let's read verses five through six.

    24:35-24:49

Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, but Christ is faithful over God's house as a son, and we are his house if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in hope.

    24:51-24:55

Again, Moses was a faithful servant in God's house.

    24:55-24:59

He was a faithful servant to God's people, but he was just a servant.

    25:01-25:10

The author of Hebrews says that Moses' life, his ministry, and the books that he wrote testified the things that were to be spoken later.

    25:11-25:16

Simply put, Moses pointed forward to someone much greater, much more glorious than himself.

    25:16-25:19

He was pointing forward to Jesus.

    25:21-25:29

Moses led the people of Israel out of enslavement in Egypt, But Jesus leads us out of enslavement to Satan, sin, and death.

    25:30-25:36

Moses received the law of God, but Jesus spoke the authoritative words of God and was the fulfillment of the law.

    25:38-25:47

Moses had a personal and close relationship with God, but Jesus enjoys a perfect and never-ending relationship with God the Father.

    25:48-25:50

    Moses was simply a shadow.

    25:50-25:53

He was a foretaste of all that Jesus would accomplish.

    25:54-25:56

Moses was simply a faithful servant.

    25:57-26:01

Whereas Jesus is described as a faithful son and heir of God.

    26:02-26:05

There's a world difference between a servant and a son.

    26:05-26:07

A servant can be hired and fired.

    26:07-26:11

They can come and go, but you are a son for life.

    26:12-26:14

And a son receives the inheritance from his father.

    26:15-26:17

And the inheritance that Jesus gets from his father is what?

    26:19-26:20

Come on, everybody, you know the theological answer.

    26:21-26:21

    What is it?

    26:22-26:24

    Everything, literally everything.

    26:26-26:31

But the good news is, Jesus isn't a lazy, good-for-nothing son who just lounges around and mooches off his dad.

    26:32-26:36

We're told that he is faithful over God's house as a son.

    26:38-26:40

Jesus is faithful in leading his people.

    26:41-26:44

He is faithful in leading his church.

    26:44-26:48

Right now, Jesus faithfully rules and reigns over everything.

    26:50-26:56

Jesus takes care of God's house like a son who genuinely loves his father with his entire being.

    26:57-27:00

Jesus is always faithful to us no matter what.

    27:01-27:08

Even when we fail, when we fall, when we stumble, he is always there to pick us up off our feet and put us back on track.

    27:10-27:14

And this faithful Lord and Savior deserves our faithfulness in return.

    27:14-27:18

God always gives us our best so we should do the same.

    27:19-27:32

And the author of Hebrews speaks this at the end of verse six when he says this, "And we are his house, we are his people, "if indeed we hold fast our confidence "and our boasting and our hope." What's he talking about here?

    27:33-27:39

Is he saying that we can earn or keep our place in God's family by being faithful and by persevering?

    27:40-27:41

That's not what he's saying at all.

    27:42-27:46

He's not saying that we earn our salvation by persevering and being faithful.

    27:46-27:51

He's saying that our perseverance and our faithfulness to prove that we have been saved.

    27:53-27:55

Again, remember the context of this letter.

    27:55-27:57

    Many Jewish Christians were suffering.

    27:57-27:58

    They were struggling.

    27:58-28:02

They were experiencing the intense heat of persecution.

    28:02-28:07

And many who claimed to follow Christ had likely fallen away because of this persecution.

    28:08-28:13

They walked away from the Lord and gave up on Him.

    28:14-28:18

And by doing so, they proved they never truly loved Jesus in the first place.

    28:19-28:22

They were never truly a part of God's house.

    28:22-28:25

They never truly were a part of God's family.

    28:27-28:33

So the author of Hebrews writes this final verse to encourage his readers to stay the course and persevere in the midst of pain.

    28:33-28:39

He wants his Christian readers to reject the idea of giving up.

    28:39-28:41

    It's not even considerate.

    28:43-28:47

I know in this room that all of us are struggling in different ways.

    28:48-28:50

Some of us are struggling more than others.

    28:51-28:53

And maybe you're on the verge of giving up in some way.

    28:55-29:01

Maybe you're wrestling with a really intense temptation or sin pattern right now, and you feel like this fight is insurmountable.

    29:01-29:03

You feel like it's time just to give up.

    29:05-29:10

You go to bed every night, praying the temptation won't be there in the morning, but you wake up and it's right there to greet you.

    29:12-29:18

Maybe you're losing your confidence in the Lord's goodness because you have an adult child who's not walking with the Lord.

    29:19-29:24

Even though you taught them the truth, you love them faithfully, they want nothing to do with Jesus.

    29:25-29:28

Or maybe you or a loved one is dealing with a health issue right now.

    29:29-29:33

And you have no idea, you keep wondering, God, why aren't you bringing healing right now?

    29:34-29:42

Or maybe you tried the right thing at work and at home, but your life seems to be falling in around you, on all fronts.

    29:43-29:48

Maybe you're diligent in sharing your faith, You're not seeing any results at all.

    29:50-29:52

Listen, the Christian life is not easy.

    29:53-29:56

God never promised us an easy path in this life.

    29:56-30:02

There are gonna be days when you wanna jump off the path that God has laid out before you, and you just wanna give up.

    30:04-30:06

But listen to what Paul has to say about this in Galatians 6, nine.

    30:07-30:18

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, "for in due season we will reap if we do not give up." In due season we will reap if we do not give up.

    30:19-30:20

Everyone please look at me right now.

    30:21-30:24

    Please do not give up.

    30:25-30:32

Please do not give up and choose to end your life if you feel you can't handle it right now.

    30:33-30:37

If you're experiencing those kind of dark thoughts, please don't keep them to yourself.

    30:37-30:42

Please talk to Pastor Jeff or myself back at guest reception later and we will help you.

    30:42-30:44

will get you the help that you need.

    30:44-30:49

Please do not give up on your marriage even though it seems hopeless.

    30:51-30:54

Please do not give up on doing the right thing.

    30:54-31:00

Please do not give up on faithfully following Jesus and sharing the message of the gospel.

    31:01-31:06

Do not give up because God will never forsake you and he will never give up on you.

    31:08-31:12

Jesus is always faithful, even when it seems like he isn't.

    31:14-31:22

As I prepared for this sermon, I was just constantly blown away by the awesomeness, the glory of Jesus, and I hope that you feel the same right now.

    31:23-31:28

Jesus is so much better, he is so much greater than anything this world has to offer.

    31:28-31:32

Never forget that Jesus is worthy of everything that you have.

    31:34-31:39

He is the apostle and high priest of our confession, who is worthy of our constant attention.

    31:39-31:44

He is the builder of God's house, who is worthy of our constant honor and respect.

    31:44-31:49

He is the faithful son of God, who is worthy of our constant faithfulness and perseverance.

    31:50-31:51

    Let's pray.

    31:54-31:56

Dear Lord, we thank you for your son.

    31:58-32:01

We thank you for all that he has done for us, all that he continues to do for us.

    32:02-32:12

Lord, as we start a new year, Help us to lay aside every sin and every hindrance and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and run towards him.

    32:16-32:19

Lord, as I said, many are struggling in this room.

    32:20-32:25

Maybe someone is struggling with thoughts of suicide, Lord.

    32:27-32:30

With thoughts of just giving up on their faith and walking away.

    32:34-32:39

or the thought of just giving up on being an active participant in their family and just being a passive observer.

    32:40-32:59

Lord, I pray you'd minister to all of us in the ways that we need ministered to, that you would encourage our hearts and help us to remember that we don't have to give up 'cause we have hope, we have a source of strength, we have a source of never-ending love.

    33:01-33:08

Lord, as we start this new year, Let it be with the attitude of hopeful expectation that yes, hard times will come.

    33:09-33:18

Yes, difficulties will arise, but you will go through these things with us and you will comfort us and you will motivate us to continue.

    33:19-33:21

We thank you in advance for what you're gonna do in 2023.

    33:22-33:23

    In Jesus' name, amen.
