Open up your Bibles, will you please, to Acts chapter 13.

    00:03-00:09

And if you're visiting with us today, our theme this year is the unstoppable church.

    00:10-00:18

And we're going to see as we go through the book of Acts, all of these roadblocks come up that could stop this young church movement.

    00:19-00:26

Things like persecution and demonic attacks and riots and all these things that the church just keeps on going.

    00:26-00:28

And 2000 years later, here we are.

    00:29-00:38

Two thousand years later, as history is filled with people who have tried to stop the church, here we are.

    00:39-00:52

And the last week we saw as Paul and Barnabas and Mark left Antioch and they went to Cyprus, and we saw how the Holy Spirit was at work empowering ministry and fighting spiritual battles and saving souls.

    00:53-00:58

Last week we looked at the longest recorded sermon we have from the Apostle Paul.

    00:59-01:00

    in Antioch of Pisidia.

    01:02-01:04

And he preached to the Jews in the synagogue.

    01:04-01:09

And last week, the sermon was basically just this.

    01:09-01:14

History is all about Jesus Christ.

    01:16-01:19

Salvation is all about Jesus Christ.

    01:19-01:23

And you have a choice to make with Jesus Christ.

    01:23-01:34

And this passage we're going to look at today, we're going to see the result of this sermon Like any Gospel sermon, is that there's a very clear line that's drawn.

    01:36-01:40

And the sermon put people in one of two camps.

    01:41-01:43

And that's still true of the Gospel today.

    01:43-01:49

Everybody sitting here, we can rightly categorize every single one of you into one of two camps.

    01:51-01:55

And there are certain areas of life Do that, right?

    01:57-02:01

You're like, "Well, Jeff, that seems very simplistic." I don't think that it is.

    02:01-02:11

There's a lot of areas of life where we get divided into two camps where each side is passionate about their choice and they think the other side is crazy.

    02:11-02:12

    You want some examples?

    02:13-02:19

How many people here today, by show of hands, are Apple computer, Apple products people?

    02:19-02:21

    Where's the Apple people at?

    02:22-02:24

Did you see how arrogantly they raised their hands?

    02:25-02:29

Did you see the disdain with which they looked at people who did not raise their hands?

    02:30-02:31

    I'm an Apple person.

    02:33-02:34

    You PC losers.

    02:37-02:40

You know I'm joking, right? I love you all the same, even if you use a lesser product.

    02:41-02:42

    Who are my PC people?

    02:44-02:46

Oh, some of you are raising two hands.

    02:47-02:52

Alright, joking aside, I switched from PC to Apple like a year or two ago, and I miss my PC.

    02:53-02:58

There are just functions on that machine that I don't have on the MacBook that I, quite frankly, I miss them.

    03:00-03:03

But you know, there's a divide there.

    03:03-03:05

    Apple versus PC.

    03:06-03:09

And before we start a riot, we're going to move on to the next one.

    03:10-03:11

    Coke and Pepsi, right?

    03:11-03:14

How many people are like Coca-Cola all the way?

    03:15-03:17

Okay, much more than I thought.

    03:17-03:19

How many people are Pepsi people?

    03:19-03:20

    Who are my Pepsi people?

    03:20-03:22

Okay, we're kind of half and half on that.

    03:23-03:24

But that seems to be something.

    03:24-03:28

I actually like them both, but I never really understood the fight.

    03:28-03:34

But being in circles and talking to people, there's a real heated argument about that.

    03:34-03:39

I can't believe you drink Pepsi, it tastes like cat sweat, and like, what?

    03:40-03:41

    Is it really that different?

    03:42-03:43

    Yeah, is there a difference?

    03:43-03:44

    Whoa.

    03:46-03:47

    Sorry, Mr. Coca-Cola.

    03:48-03:51

Um, the other one is Ford and Chevy.

    03:52-03:53

Who are the Ford people here?

    03:55-03:55

    Okay?

    03:57-03:59

You seem a little embarrassed about that, but that's okay.

    04:00-04:00

    Who are the Chevy people?

    04:02-04:07

I used to work in the automotive section at Walmart, and I dealt with this thing on a daily basis.

    04:07-04:19

I mean, there were people that would come in, and they were like, "Ford! Ford! Ford!" And then there are people like, you know, people that say that usually end up pushing that board.

    04:21-04:21

    Right?

    04:22-04:25

So, Ford and Chevy, what else?

    04:27-04:28

    Here, here's one.

    04:29-04:35

There's not even like another alternative to, well, there kind of is, but I just wrote it down this way.

    04:35-04:37

I just wrote down the New York Yankees.

    04:38-04:39

Like, what about the Red Sox?

    04:39-04:41

I'm not even talking about like, what's the alternative?

    04:42-05:05

like with the Yankees you either have people that love the Yankees or you have people that hate the Yankees. How many people here are New York Yankees fans? Okay there are like five of us and for fear of public persecution I saw how those hands were raised. I'm a Yankees fan. How many people I hate the Yankees.

    05:07-05:07

    OK.

    05:09-05:09

    Yeah.

    05:10-05:11

    Much less ashamed.

    05:13-05:15

And see, I always liked the Yankees because I sort of bought into their gimmick.

    05:16-05:19

That they were the corporate boys.

    05:20-05:21

    Money is no object.

    05:21-05:22

We'll spend whatever we need to.

    05:22-05:25

They were like the bad guys of baseball.

    05:25-05:26

And I kind of bought into that gimmick.

    05:26-05:27

    So I like the Yankees.

    05:29-05:30

I'm not even going to ask.

    05:30-05:36

But you know, to a slight lesser degree, the Pittsburgh Steelers are like that, right?

    05:37-05:41

Like people love the Steelers, but you know, there's a lot of people that hate the Steelers.

    05:43-05:44

    Generally, people outside this market.

    05:44-05:46

There's people here that hate the Steelers.

    05:46-05:47

    I see some fingers pointing.

    05:48-05:49

    Who here hates the Steelers?

    05:51-05:52

We lay hands and pray right now?

    05:54-05:55

    You are loved.

    05:55-05:56

    You are loved.

    05:57-05:58

    You are loved.

    05:58-06:05

I felt from that section of the room, I felt this sort of spiritual stronghold.

    06:07-06:10

But on more serious notes, people get divided into two camps, don't they?

    06:10-06:11

    Like capital punishment.

    06:12-06:14

I'm not going to ask you to raise your hands now.

    06:15-06:16

    You understand, there's two camps.

    06:16-06:23

There are people that are like, "I'm all for capital punishment." And there are people that are dead set against capital punishment.

    06:24-06:27

I have very strong beliefs about that and biblically why.

    06:27-06:34

about that another day. Another issue is guns. The pro-gun people, the no-gun people.

    06:35-07:06

Puts people in two very distinct camps. We could talk about abortion. There are people that are pro-choice and pro-life and each side is very passionate about their side and have very passionate feelings about the other side. In most recent history in our culture, I think the police, just the police forces that put people into two camps, the people that support the police and the people that view all police as people who abuse their power.

    07:07-07:11

But we're seeing that to become more and more an issue where camp is divided.

    07:12-07:16

And honestly, let's address the big one, right?

    07:16-07:20

What's the biggest one that has people divided into two camps right now?

    07:21-07:24

    Trump and Clinton, right?

    07:25-07:36

I'm certainly not going to ask anybody to raise your hands on that, but can you see the violence, the hatred over these two camps?

    07:37-07:49

Well, there's nothing more so divisive as far as putting people into two camps than the gospel of Jesus Christ and the people who are enemies of the gospel.

    07:51-07:53

people who have not received the Gospel.

    07:54-07:57

And I don't want you to imagine there's some kind of a third option.

    07:58-08:08

And I think in our culture, because we've had such religious freedom and tolerance over the years, I think in our minds we've sort of embraced this third option.

    08:08-08:15

Like there's these radical Christians, you know, they're handing out Gospel tracts and they're preaching, and they're always wanting to pray.

    08:15-08:17

And there's like the radical Christians.

    08:17-08:26

And then there's like the people They hate the church, and those are the more liberal people I guess, I suppose, but they hate the church and they hate religion.

    08:27-08:34

But I think that we've constructed this third category, it's like, we'll call them diet Christians.

    08:35-08:36

    Christian light.

    08:36-08:39

You know, less calories, they're gluten-free Christians.

    08:39-08:50

They come to church, and they're not like super fired up about the gospel, but they're not like against the gospel, but they're like, they do the church thing unless there's something that interferes with the church thing, and then that's more important.

    08:50-08:51

    Let's not get too radical.

    08:52-08:57

We've created this third category, but understand, biblically, there is no third category.

    08:57-08:58

    You know that.

    08:58-08:59

    Biblically, there is no third.

    09:02-09:03

    Jesus taught this.

    09:03-09:04

    The Gospels teach this.

    09:04-09:06

    The Epistles teach this.

    09:06-09:07

    There's no third category.

    09:08-09:13

Biblically, you're either dead in your sins, or you're alive in Jesus Christ.

    09:14-09:16

    There's no half-dead, half-alive thing out there.

    09:17-09:17

    one or the other.

    09:18-09:22

Biblically, you're walking in light, or you're walking in darkness.

    09:24-09:27

    There's no dusk, biblically.

    09:27-09:33

Jesus said on the last days, He'll divide His people into sheep and goats.

    09:34-09:36

Again, Jesus didn't have a third option.

    09:36-09:41

Like I've got sheep and I've got goats, and some people are just like chickens, and we're not sure where to categorize them.

    09:42-09:45

Jesus said there's two categories of division.

    09:47-09:49

You have one of two fathers.

    09:50-09:59

Either God the Father - the Lord God is your Father, or like the Jews that Jesus condemned, He says you are of your father, the devil.

    10:00-10:01

    Who's your daddy?

    10:01-10:02

    Somebody's your daddy.

    10:03-10:04

    There's no third option.

    10:06-10:08

So in our outline today, I want you to jot a few notes down.

    10:09-10:13

    divides. The Gospel divides.

    10:13-10:14

    What side are you on?

    10:15-10:29

Again, this passage comes in the tale of Paul preaching this sermon, and the sermon was all about Jesus. Jesus the fulfillment and key figure of history. Jesus the key figure of salvation. And you need to do something about Jesus Christ.

    10:30-11:06

And look at verse 42. It says, "As they went out," as the apostles, the missionaries, they went out, the people begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath. And after the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God. The next Sabbath, almost the whole The whole city gathered to hear the Word of the Lord.

    11:06-11:08

So number one, jot this down in your outline.

    11:08-11:09

    Two camps, right?

    11:11-11:13

You either receive the Word or reject the Word.

    11:14-11:16

You either receive the Word or reject the Word.

    11:17-11:20

We saw in verses 42-44, these are the receivers.

    11:20-11:21

We'll talk about them in a second.

    11:22-11:27

But it says they begged, they followed, they brought their friends to hear.

    11:28-11:28

    Get back to that.

    11:29-11:53

So there are people that receive, but I want you to see also in verse 45, For those who rejected, verse 45 says, "But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began to contradict what was spoken by Paul, reviling him." These were people that rejected the message.

    11:53-11:57

And they were motivated by jealousy.

    11:58-12:00

You can't prove the Word wrong.

    12:02-12:04

    You've got two options.

    12:06-12:08

One is just flat-out denying the Word.

    12:09-12:14

You notice it says that they began to contradict what was spoken.

    12:15-12:19

They were contradicting everything that the Apostle Paul was speaking.

    12:20-12:22

How annoying do you think that was?

    12:22-12:23

    Could you imagine?

    12:23-12:29

I get up to preach, and I'm like, "Open up your Bible, it's the Word of God!" You have a group of people here...

    12:29-12:30

    No, it's not!

    12:32-12:33

Jesus Christ died for your sins.

    12:33-12:34

    No, He didn't!

    12:36-12:41

You know, there's heaven to gain, there's hell to gain, depending on your choice.

    12:42-12:43

    No, that's not true!

    12:44-12:45

    There's no hell!

    12:45-12:47

Could you imagine there's a group sitting here doing that?

    12:47-12:50

And that's what Paul was dealing with here.

    12:51-12:53

These people were just contradicting what he was saying.

    12:54-12:55

    Jesus is the Messiah.

    12:55-12:56

    No, he's not.

    12:58-12:59

    Jesus died for your sins.

    12:59-13:00

    No, He didn't.

    13:02-13:08

So when you can't prove the word wrong in the discussion, they just flat out denied the word.

    13:08-13:11

    Secondly, they hated the messenger.

    13:11-13:13

    It says they reviled Paul.

    13:14-13:16

We already saw that in Acts, right?

    13:16-13:20

You can't do anything about the message, so you hate the messenger.

    13:20-13:22

    That happened to Peter, right?

    13:22-13:22

    Remember that?

    13:24-13:28

to Stephen, he lost his life over it, it's already happened to Paul, and it's going to continue to.

    13:31-13:38

Sometimes it's hard to tell who received the word and who rejected the word, because sometimes the people that are rejecting the word still go to church every Sunday.

    13:40-13:44

Just out of duty, or religious checkmark, or whatever.

    13:45-13:46

So how can you tell which is which?

    13:46-13:48

Well, look at verse 43 again.

    13:49-13:53

So these people were, It says they were following Paul and Barnabas.

    13:54-13:55

Like, tell us more. We want to hear more.

    13:55-13:56

    Tell us more about Jesus.

    13:58-14:06

And I don't know who was who, where all these people were with the Lord, but I want you to see how they were taught.

    14:07-14:28

Verse 43 says, "As they spoke with them, Paul and Barnabas, as they spoke with them, urged them to continue in the grace of God." Because the proof of salvation That's not the proof of salvation.

    14:30-14:35

The proof of salvation is not being raised in a Christian home.

    14:37-14:42

Your parents could be the two best Christians walking the planet, and that guarantees nothing about your salvation.

    14:43-14:45

That's not the proof of salvation.

    14:45-14:50

The proof of salvation is not once upon a time you made some profession of your own.

    14:50-15:08

of faith. Like, "Yeah, back in 1985, I went through these confirmation classes, and the preacher said I was saved, so I came saved." Those aren't evidence of salvation. Biblically, the evidence of salvation, the proof of salvation, is perseverance. It's perseverance.

    15:09-15:12

Like what do you mean by that? I mean John 8, verse 31.

    15:13-15:22

Listen, "Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples.

    15:25-15:26

    Jesus was saying, "We'll see.

    15:26-15:28

    Are you truly my disciples?

    15:28-15:35

We're going to see." You will see, Jesus knew, but they would see if they abide in his word.

    15:36-15:37

    It's endurance, it's perseverance.

    15:38-15:49

It's like Hebrews 3.14 says, "For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed," listen to this, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.

    15:52-15:55

It's about endurance. Are you holding that original confidence?

    15:57-16:07

We have a tendency to say, "I want to look at some event of my past," and that's really not the evidence. The evidence is looking at your walk right now. Right now.

    16:09-16:11

Today's the evidence. Are you walking with Christ today?

    16:12-16:16

I don't care what you did, you know, 1985 or whatever.

    16:16-16:17

    What are you doing today?

    16:18-16:18

    That's the evidence.

    16:19-16:19

    Are you persevering?

    16:19-16:20

    Are you abiding?

    16:22-16:24

Well, I had a really great day yesterday.

    16:24-16:25

    That doesn't mean you're saved.

    16:26-16:27

I had a horrible day yesterday.

    16:27-16:28

That doesn't mean you're not saved.

    16:29-16:31

    That's about are you abiding?

    16:31-16:32

    Are you persevering?

    16:35-16:37

So looking at your life right now, are you a word receiver?

    16:37-16:38

Or are you a word rejecter?

    16:40-16:41

    What does that look like?

    16:41-16:44

Again, my question, do you love the Word?

    16:44-16:50

Verse 42 tells us that they begged that these things might be told them the next Sabbath.

    16:52-16:54

They begged. Do you love the Word like that?

    16:55-17:02

I'll tell you what, there is nothing that would make me happier or more blessed.

    17:02-17:19

If you were leaving church today and on your way out you grabbed my sleeve, like I'm begging you, Pastor Jeff, preach next week too. We preach just like you did this week because that was awesome. That would really bless my heart. Now don't do it because now I know if you do it it's just because I told you to do it.

    17:23-17:42

But you see the point. The point is that's what they did. They're like, "Please, please come back and tell us more. Would you please tell us more about this Jesus?" They begged them to come back. "Well that's interesting. We'll see if there's no game "Next week we might go hear Him again." No, they're like, "We need to hear more about this." And some of them, they weren't even content to wait.

    17:42-17:49

They're like, "We're gonna follow you." I'd be like, "You just jump in your car "and you follow me home." My wife's making lunch and you're like sitting on her couch.

    17:49-17:51

Like, "Yeah, we wanna hear more about this Jesus.

    17:52-17:52

    "So do you love it?

    17:53-17:55

"Secondly, do you crave it?" And they followed.

    17:55-17:57

    We need to know more.

    17:58-18:00

I can't wait until next week to hear more.

    18:02-18:04

Is that your attitude towards the Word of God?

    18:07-18:10

You know your attitude towards the Word of God when you share it.

    18:11-18:14

When you share it, verse 44 says the whole city came out.

    18:14-18:15

    How did that happen?

    18:16-18:21

Because these people who heard the Word went and told other people, "Hey, you need to come and hear this, you need to come and hear this." That's how it happened.

    18:22-18:27

They didn't start a Facebook page or start a website or whatever, or GoFundMe for this preaching thing.

    18:28-18:32

People went out and said, "Hey, you've got to hear these people talk about Jesus.

    18:33-18:37

It's awesome." And the whole city came out.

    18:38-18:41

So what impact does the Word of God have on your life?

    18:43-18:44

Do you love it? Do you crave it? Do you share it?

    18:45-18:47

What impact does the Word have on your life?

    18:47-18:49

Are you hungry for the Word and you can't wait to get into it?

    18:50-19:00

Or, if you walked out of here today and you forgot your Bible, would your week look any different than if you took it?

    19:02-19:06

Maybe you're either a word receiver, or you're a word rejecter.

    19:08-19:10

So the Gospel divides what side are you on.

    19:10-19:19

Secondly today, not only do you either receive the Word or you reject the Word, secondly, these words are chosen very carefully, and we're about to go to Bible school here for a minute, alright?

    19:20-19:21

    So, let's tune in.

    19:23-19:27

You either choose hell, or are chosen for heaven.

    19:28-19:30

Look at these verses with me.

    19:31-19:39

Isaiah 46 says, "And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly..." This is in the face of people reviling them, okay?

    19:39-19:45

"...spoke out boldly, saying, 'It was necessary that the Word of God be spoken to you first.

    19:47-19:53

Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

    19:56-20:00

For so the Lord has commanded us, saying..." This is from Isaiah 49.6.

    20:01-20:12

"I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth." And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord.

    20:12-20:14

    Look at this next phrase.

    20:14-20:21

"And as many as were appointed to eternal life..." Believed.

    20:22-20:23

    Stop there.

    20:24-20:29

"You either choose hell or you are chosen for heaven." That's the dividing line.

    20:31-20:31

    Let's break this down.

    20:32-20:38

Verse 46, first of all, Paul says, "It was necessary the Word of God be spoken first to you." What does he mean?

    20:38-20:40

Well, the Gospel is for the Jews first.

    20:40-20:41

    Right?

    20:41-20:48

Romans 1:16, "I'm not ashamed of the Gospel for it is the power of God." Salvation for the Jews first and also for the Gentiles.

    20:48-20:50

So it's for the Jews first.

    20:50-20:57

Jesus told the early missionaries that He said, "I'll go to the house of Israel first." It was Jews were to receive first.

    20:57-20:59

That's what Paul's talking about here.

    20:59-21:02

Salvation, the Gospels for the Jews first.

    21:05-21:06

    And they got jealous.

    21:06-21:11

We saw in verse 45, there was a jealousy over Gentiles receiving the Gospel.

    21:11-21:13

We spent some time talking about that.

    21:13-21:14

There were a lot of Jews.

    21:14-21:15

It was kind of a racial thing.

    21:15-21:16

    They hated Gentiles.

    21:17-21:18

    Gentiles were dogs.

    21:18-21:19

    Gentiles were worthless.

    21:19-21:24

We can't believe God would have anything to do with these filthy creatures called Gentiles.

    21:26-21:28

    I'll even quote from Isaiah.

    21:29-21:30

    This Old Testament promise.

    21:30-21:34

Isaiah says that the Gospel was going to go to the Gentiles.

    21:34-21:37

God's plan of salvation was for the ends of the earth.

    21:38-21:39

    God promised this would happen.

    21:39-21:40

    Look at this phrase.

    21:42-21:45

Very interesting the way he puts it.

    21:45-21:59

He says, "Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life..." Paul says, "I brought you the Gospel and you just threw it aside like garbage.

    21:59-22:00

    Why did you do that?

    22:00-22:00

    Look at this phrase.

    22:01-22:08

He says, "You judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life." Notice it doesn't say that God judged you unworthy.

    22:08-22:09

    It doesn't say that.

    22:09-22:16

It doesn't say God was looking at you and said, "He's not worth saving." He says, "You judged yourself unworthy.

    22:18-22:19

    You did that.

    22:20-22:21

    You took the gospel.

    22:22-22:26

You decided you weren't worthy of the gospel and you thrust it aside.

    22:27-22:30

The point is you are responsible for how you react to grace.

    22:32-22:38

People who challenge me in the gospel say, "You're telling me that God would send somebody to hell?" No, I'm not saying that at all.

    22:39-22:41

The Bible says that people send themselves to hell.

    22:41-22:41

    Okay?

    22:42-22:43

I don't believe God sends anyone to hell.

    22:44-22:47

    People send themselves there, biblically.

    22:49-22:51

I want you to see the contrast here.

    22:52-22:54

You've judged yourself unworthy of eternal life.

    22:54-22:58

I want to try to give you an earthly example of sort of what this means.

    23:00-23:06

But you know with my 10 year old, his favorite thing in the world is his iPad.

    23:07-23:10

And I've told him that's a privilege for you to use that.

    23:10-23:15

and you have to earn the privilege of using your iPad.

    23:17-23:20

Or to put it in the way that I explain my tenure, I'm like, that's for big boys.

    23:21-23:25

So if you can behave yourself, do what you're supposed to do and be a big boy, the iPad's for big boys.

    23:25-23:32

And I tell them that in the outset, whether it's about being good at school or especially being good at church.

    23:33-23:34

    Big boys get privileges.

    23:37-23:38

on the days that he completely blows it.

    23:42-23:44

He knew on the front end what the choice was.

    23:44-23:48

He made a choice to act immaturely.

    23:48-23:50

He made a choice to disobey.

    23:52-23:55

My answer is just simply, look, you've proven that you're not a big boy.

    23:56-23:57

    You made the choice.

    23:57-24:02

You don't get the privilege because by your choices, you've proved to me that you're not a big boy.

    24:03-24:09

And it's sort of in that sense that someone judges themselves unworthy of eternal life.

    24:11-24:12

God wants you to have it.

    24:13-24:22

God set up the condition for receiving it, but you by your choices, by your action, you've proven that you don't deserve it.

    24:22-24:23

    You're not worthy of it.

    24:25-24:29

Not by God's word, not by the preacher's word, but by your word.

    24:31-24:39

So we have on one hand the people that - notice the wording again - they judge themselves unworthy of eternal life.

    24:39-24:41

And look at the other side, verse 48.

    24:42-24:45

Does it say that the people that were saved judged themselves worthy of eternal life?

    24:45-24:47

    No. Look what it says.

    24:47-25:00

"As many as were appointed to eternal life believed." So some people chose hell, and other people were appointed by God to receive eternal life.

    25:01-25:14

When we talk about election, understand that God's sovereignty in election is spoken of specifically in regards to those who receive salvation.

    25:15-25:18

I'm going to say that again, because I want to be crystal clear.

    25:19-25:25

God's sovereignty in election is spoken of specifically in regards to those who receive salvation.

    25:26-25:33

In other words, The Bible never says that God chooses people to go to hell.

    25:33-25:34

    Understand that.

    25:36-25:42

The Bible says that God elects, He chooses, He ordains, He appoints people to heaven.

    25:42-25:48

But the Bible doesn't say, the Bible nowhere says that God chooses to send someone to hell.

    25:50-25:53

I think the wording here in God's Word is very specific to that end.

    25:54-26:07

Comparing verse 46 and 48, "You judge yourselves unworthy, as many as were appointed?" Those who go to hell, choose to go to hell.

    26:08-26:13

Those who go to heaven, are those who have been chosen by God to go.

    26:15-26:17

You're like, "Pastor Jeff, can you explain that?

    26:18-26:21

    What's the answer?" Nope.

    26:22-26:23

    I sure can't.

    26:24-26:26

But I'll tell you what, I haven't lost a minute's sleep over it.

    26:27-26:31

Because He is God and I am not.

    26:31-26:33

When we talk about election, I get two common responses.

    26:34-26:38

One response is, "I don't understand it." And you can't. You can't.

    26:39-26:49

You have as much chance of understanding the things of God God, as a fruit fly does, of understanding how an iPhone works.

    26:51-26:52

    It's not going to happen.

    26:54-26:57

God lives outside of time and space.

    26:58-27:00

This all makes total sense to God.

    27:02-27:12

So I'm this fallen finite creature that lives in time and space, and there's some things about the Almighty, perfectly sovereign God that I don't understand.

    27:12-27:13

That is what makes sense to me.

    27:14-27:15

to understand some things about God.

    27:17-27:24

So when God says people who go to hell choose to go, people who go to heaven are because I chose them to go, okay, that's what you say, but that's what the Bible says.

    27:26-27:30

But the other argument, the other response is I don't think that's fair.

    27:31-27:32

    I don't think that's fair.

    27:33-27:37

My response to that is you really don't want fair.

    27:39-27:40

    You don't want fair.

    27:41-27:46

Because fair would mean the first time God cast you into hell forever. That's fair.

    27:49-27:51

See, none of us truly got what we deserve.

    27:53-27:54

You don't want God to be fair. God is gracious.

    27:58-28:00

So another clear dividing line. I could say so much more about this.

    28:02-28:06

But I just want you to see today for our purposes, here's a clear dividing line on your destination.

    28:08-28:11

You're either chosen by God for heaven, or you chose hell.

    28:13-28:15

    There's no third destination.

    28:15-28:18

There aren't people that die that go someplace else.

    28:18-28:21

There's a very clear division in the gospel.

    28:22-28:22

    What side are you on?

    28:24-28:29

And finally for today, you either work with God or you work against God.

    28:30-28:32

Last few verses, 49 through 52.

    28:34-28:43

"And the word of the Lord was spreading throughout the whole region, but the Jews incited the the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city.

    28:45-28:49

Stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their district.

    28:52-28:55

But they shook the dust from their feet against them and went to Iconium.

    28:56-29:00

And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

    29:02-29:03

    So the word was spreading.

    29:03-29:06

That's the natural result of receiving salvation.

    29:07-29:09

The Jews decided that they're going to bring in the big guns.

    29:10-29:12

They brought out the important people.

    29:12-29:16

We're going to let the movers and shakers of our culture know what's happening.

    29:16-29:22

They go after the important women and the important men, and they end up driving Paul and Barnabas out of town.

    29:23-29:26

And your Bible says that they shook the dust off their feet.

    29:26-29:28

Did you know that was sort of a common practice back in that day?

    29:29-29:30

Mainly it was done by Jews.

    29:30-29:41

If a Jew would travel through Gentile territory, and they were going back into Jewish territory, They didn't want to take Gentile dirt with them to mix with the Jewish dirt.

    29:42-29:43

    So that was a practice.

    29:43-29:48

While they were at the border of Gentile territory, they would shake the Gentile dirt from their feet.

    29:49-29:53

It was a picture of, "I'm not taking any of that with me." Done.

    29:54-29:56

Jesus actually used this practice with the first people that He sent out.

    29:56-30:01

When He sent out the 72, remember He said if they reject your message, shake the dust from your feet and move on.

    30:02-30:04

    And here, same thing.

    30:06-30:12

driven out by these people persecuting them, and it just says they shook the dust from their feet.

    30:14-30:20

At some point, when you face willful rejection and opposition, you've got to move on.

    30:21-30:23

At some point, you've just got to move on.

    30:23-30:34

You're like, "I've been sharing the gospel with this person at work, you know, for the last six months, and they just get nastier and nastier and nastier." At some point, you've got to shake the dust from your feet.

    30:34-30:43

At some point you have to say, "I'm casting my pearl before swine here." Maybe there are people around me that are receptive to hearing the gospel.

    30:43-30:53

Maybe I should be putting my time and energy in those people versus this person that continually is getting more and more nasty and angrier with me for sharing the gospel.

    30:55-30:57

Sometimes you've got to move on.

    30:58-31:00

I want to remind you what Jesus said in Matthew 12, 30.

    31:01-31:13

Jesus said, "Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters." So according to Jesus, there are two sides.

    31:15-31:16

According to Jesus, there are two teams.

    31:16-31:19

According to Jesus, there are two tasks being done.

    31:19-31:33

There are people that are working with Him, and gathering, and working, and advancing the kingdom, and there are the people that are scattering, working against what he's doing, but there's no third option.

    31:36-31:38

There's a clear line we see in this passage.

    31:38-31:42

There are people who are working with God, and there are people who are working against God.

    31:43-31:47

In 2016, I'd like to remind you that the line has always been there.

    31:49-31:52

The thing is, the line used to be harder to discern.

    31:54-31:55

The line has always been there.

    31:55-31:57

It used to be harder to discern.

    31:58-32:05

But one good thing that is coming out of a culture that is more and more rejecting God, like what good could come out of that?

    32:05-32:06

There is something good that comes out of that.

    32:06-32:12

When the culture rejects God, is the line becomes more and more clear.

    32:14-32:15

    You're going to see this.

    32:18-32:24

I can't even imagine in her lifetime what Juliet's gonna see.

    32:26-32:28

I can't imagine what Brooklyn is going to see.

    32:30-32:38

Think of these little girls in their lifetime, living in a culture that more and more and more is rejecting.

    32:38-32:40

    More and more is persecuting.

    32:40-32:53

More and more, the laws are removing the protection of Christians, and the laws are actually going against the types of things that we stand for.

    32:55-32:57

It's becoming more and more clear every day.

    32:59-33:01

And it's only going to get more obvious.

    33:03-33:04

It's only going to get more obvious.

    33:05-33:11

I want to close with a very familiar passage that I thought it was so appropriate to share in light of this message.

    33:11-33:13

And it comes from the book of Joshua, back in the Old Testament.

    33:14-33:16

    Joshua 24.15.

    33:17-33:18

The end of the book of Joshua.

    33:18-33:23

They had crossed over into this promised land that God had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    33:24-33:28

They defeated the enemies, most of them, not all of them.

    33:28-33:36

They defeated the enemies that were occupying the land, and they divided the land among the tribes of Israel.

    33:37-33:58

Joshua says, "And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your father served in a region beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites you dwell, Joshua was like, look, let's just be very clear about who our team is, okay?

    33:59-34:03

Don't be like, well, I kind of worship, you know, I'm kind of a worshiper, I'm kind of a free spirit.

    34:03-34:07

No, pick a team. Pick a team. Pick a team!

    34:08-34:09

Put a name on what you worship.

    34:12-34:15

Because if you're not following Jesus Christ, you've already chosen.

    34:17-34:20

I want to echo the sentiment that Joshua was making.

    34:20-34:22

Let's make it official, okay? No pretenses.

    34:24-34:26

Look at this last phrase Joshua says.

    34:27-34:27

    You know what he says.

    34:29-34:41

He says, "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." I'm with Jesus.

    34:43-34:44

    No matter the cost.

    34:45-34:46

No matter how hard it's going to get.

    34:47-34:55

No matter what it costs me, no matter how long I have on this earth, I'm with Jesus.

    34:56-34:58

    Are you? Let's pray.

    35:00-35:10

Father in heaven, it is so easy for us to lament the condition of our culture, but Father, I think one good thing that's coming out of it, it's shaking the pretenders.

    35:12-35:16

And it's bringing them to the point that they have to really understand what they believe and make that decision.

    35:18-35:23

Father, we saw very clearly in this passage when Paul preached, people just fell into camps.

    35:23-35:24

There were people that rejected Your Word.

    35:24-35:26

There were people that received Your Word.

    35:26-35:29

There are people sitting in this auditorium right now who are just like that.

    35:29-35:32

There are people right now who are fighting against Your Word.

    35:32-35:33

    The preacher's stupid.

    35:33-35:35

I can't believe I wasted my time here this morning.

    35:35-35:41

And there are people that love Your Word because it displays the beauty and glory of who You are.

    35:43-35:49

Father, there are people here today whom You have chosen, You have elected for heaven.

    35:50-35:51

There are people who have judged themselves unworthy.

    35:53-35:55

They simply don't want to receive the gift.

    35:57-36:00

Father, there are people here today who want to work with You.

    36:02-36:04

There are people here who would work against You.

    36:06-36:08

And according to Jesus, there's no third option.

    36:08-36:09

    There's no bench warmer.

    36:09-36:14

There's no person standing on the sideline making a difference either way.

    36:16-36:39

Father, as the lines are being drawn up in great humility, with great love, and only, only, only, only by the power of your Holy Spirit, we want to say, as for me and my house, and we would say, as for me and my church, we will serve the Lord.

    36:40-36:40

    Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 13:42-52

  1. What does it mean to "continue in the grace of God" (Acts 13:43)?

  2. Why do people attack the Word and believers (Acts 13:45, 50)? Why don’t they just "live and let live"?

  3. Those who reject Christ "judged themselves unworthy of eternal life" (Acts 13:46), and those who believed were "appointed to eternal life" (Acts 13:48). How does this help you understand election (God chooses) and free will (man chooses)?

  4. How do you know when to "shake the dust off your feet" (Acts 13:51) and move on when someone continually rejects your witnessing?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for our church to be clearly on the side of Christ, as the division line is becoming more and more clear in our culture.

The Unstoppable Gospel.

Open up your Bibles with me please to the book of Acts 13.

    00:06-00:07

    Acts 13.

    00:07-00:16

While you're turning, doesn't it seem like sometimes life is just an endless cycle of the same stuff?

    00:16-00:17

Doesn't it feel like that sometimes?

    00:18-00:22

Like for example, I think of the dishes in our house.

    00:22-00:26

There are times that I see dishes piled up in the sink, and I ask Aaron, how many people live here?

    00:28-00:31

At what point did this become like an Eaton Park franchise?

    00:31-00:33

Like, where did all these dishes come from?

    00:33-00:34

    I ate once today.

    00:35-00:39

Like, who is it that's using all these dishes?

    00:39-00:40

    Or laundry?

    00:41-00:42

    Laundry.

    00:42-00:48

You know, it just seems like you just get caught up on laundry, and you turn your head, and again, how many people live here?

    00:49-00:50

    Or mowing the grass?

    00:50-00:53

Didn't I just mow this a couple days ago, and it needs mowed again?

    00:56-00:57

    What about your job?

    00:57-00:59

Does your job feel like that sometimes?

    01:00-01:03

I don't know how it is where you work, but mine feels like that sometimes.

    01:04-01:15

A big part of my job is working all week studying a passage of Scripture and trying to understand it and present it in a clear way.

    01:17-01:25

And whether that goes well, or whether it does not go well, Sunday night, I have to start all over again.

    01:27-01:29

So much of life sometimes seems like a cycle.

    01:30-01:31

    Life and death.

    01:33-01:35

    Births and funerals.

    01:37-01:42

And some people look at all of history like that.

    01:42-01:45

We're not going to turn there, but just write down this reference.

    01:45-01:48

    Ecclesiastes 1:2-11.

    01:48-01:50

Solomon says life seems like that.

    01:50-01:52

Sun goes up, sun goes down.

    01:53-01:55

The waters flow, the wind blows.

    01:55-01:58

It just seems like constant cycle, never-ending.

    01:58-02:03

Solomon says a lot of life seems like we're the hamster on the wheel, right?

    02:03-02:06

And we make fun of the hamster on the wheel.

    02:06-02:07

Look at him going, look at him going.

    02:07-02:08

And then what do we do?

    02:08-02:09

We go get on a treadmill.

    02:09-02:10

    Right?

    02:10-02:11

    Same thing.

    02:11-02:13

But much of life seems like that.

    02:13-02:16

Like just a lot of stuff happening, but nothing's really happening.

    02:17-02:18

    It's a cycle.

    02:19-02:24

But you see, when Solomon talks about that cycle, he's presenting a view of life without God.

    02:24-02:27

That's what life looks like when you don't think about your Creator.

    02:27-02:34

Life seems meaningless without God because it is meaningless without God.

    02:35-02:45

But before we look at this passage today, understand that the Bible doesn't present life as a cycle.

    02:47-02:50

The Bible doesn't look at history as this constant cycle.

    02:51-02:52

The Bible looks at history as a timeline.

    02:53-03:08

not just random events that happen here and there, but a timeline that is being governed and taken care of and administrated by God Himself.

    03:09-03:10

    Life is a timeline.

    03:11-03:13

And the message of the Bible is clear.

    03:15-03:16

And this is on your outline.

    03:17-03:19

This is the one thing you have to catch today.

    03:21-03:22

    God has a plan.

    03:24-03:25

    God has a plan.

    03:27-03:28

    So much in our lives.

    03:28-03:29

    I've been guilty of this.

    03:30-03:31

Like, Pastor Jeff, what are you going to do?

    03:31-03:33

I don't know. We'll figure it out when we get there.

    03:34-03:35

I'm not sure what we're going to do.

    03:36-03:37

I'm going to have to think about it.

    03:38-03:39

    God is not like that.

    03:39-03:40

    God has a plan.

    03:41-03:43

God had a plan from the very beginning.

    03:43-03:47

And this plan is being played out throughout history.

    03:48-03:53

In Acts 13, we've already seen Paul and Barnabas and John Mark.

    03:53-03:55

They left Antioch and went to Cyprus.

    03:55-03:58

And we saw last week how the Holy Spirit was at work.

    03:58-04:00

    He was empowering ministry.

    04:00-04:02

    He was fighting spiritual battles.

    04:02-04:03

    And He was saving souls.

    04:04-04:05

Let's pick up where we left off last week.

    04:06-04:07

We're going to be in verse 13.

    04:07-04:21

It says, "Now Paul and his companions set sail from Paphos and they came to Perga and Pamphylia." That's a great verse for alliteration there, isn't it?

    04:21-04:28

"And John left them and returned to Jerusalem." Hang on, what's going on here?

    04:28-04:34

Well, this trip from Paphos to Perga was a 200-mile journey by boat.

    04:35-04:37

Okay, so this is quite a hike.

    04:37-04:43

But your Bible says that John left them to go back home, He went back to Antioch where they took Him previously.

    04:44-04:45

    He went home-home.

    04:45-04:47

    He went back to Jerusalem.

    04:48-04:49

    And why did John leave?

    04:49-04:52

John Mark. This isn't John the Apostle.

    04:52-04:52

    This is John Mark.

    04:52-04:54

The question is why did he leave?

    04:54-04:56

And the biblical answer is we don't know.

    04:57-05:00

I've read a lot of commentaries this week.

    05:00-05:01

    What made him leave?

    05:02-05:03

Was he scared of the journey?

    05:03-05:06

Was he not wanting the Gospel to go to the Gentiles?

    05:06-06:14

There's a lot of reasons that people give why he might have left, explicitly say and there's a whole lot I want to say about that but that's going to come up later because you're going to see that there's a bit of a fallout that happens because of this desertion we'll get to that verse 14 it says but they went on from purgah and came to Antioch and Pisidia now this is a different Antioch this isn't the Antioch where they came from this is a different one it was actually a hundred mile journey from Perga to this Antioch a hundred mile extremely dangerous journey again some people say well that's why Mark abandoned him he didn't want to take the trip I don't know but it was a dangerous journey and in verse 15 it says I'm sorry rest of verse 14 it says on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down after the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogues sent a message to them saying, "Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, say it.

    06:15-06:21

I understand the synagogues and that those are the little Jewish houses of worship." And it was a common practice.

    06:21-06:37

If there was a rabbi that was traveling, and he was kind of coming through town, and he's visiting the local synagogue, they'd be like, "Hey, do you have something to say that you want to say?" It'd be sort of like if we had somebody from another Harvest Bible Chapel, another pastor was coming through, like Pastor Luke Ahrens, who spoke here before.

    06:37-06:38

    He was just passenger visiting.

    06:39-06:43

We might say, "Hey Luke, you've got something you want to say to the congregation?" And he gets up and says a few words.

    06:44-06:45

That's kind of what was happening here with Paul.

    06:45-06:47

They knew he was a rabbi.

    06:48-06:49

    A well-trained one.

    06:50-07:04

And they said, "Do you have any word of encouragement for our people?" Knowing what we've studied about Paul so far, what are the chances he's going to take them up Pretty good.

    07:06-07:18

The Bible says, "So Paul stood up, and motioning with his hands, said..." What we're going to see here is the longest recorded sermon that we have from the Apostle Paul.

    07:19-07:22

He wrote like half the New Testament. He writes all these epistles.

    07:22-07:32

But as far as actual sermon content recorded, this is the longest sermon from the second greatest preacher in the history of preaching behind Jesus Christ Himself.

    07:34-07:35

So do us well to pay attention.

    07:35-07:38

And here's the thesis of his sermon.

    07:39-07:39

    Okay?

    07:40-07:45

When you prepare a message, when you prepare a sermon, it has to center around a theme.

    07:45-07:46

What's the theme of the text?

    07:46-07:47

What's the theme of the passage?

    07:47-07:52

And here's the theme of the passage that Paul was preaching to the people.

    07:52-07:55

I'm going to give it to you ahead of time because then we're going to see it as we go through it.

    07:56-07:57

    God has a plan.

    07:58-07:59

    God has a plan.

    08:01-08:02

God has a plan for what?

    08:03-08:04

Jot this down first of all.

    08:05-08:06

God has a plan for history.

    08:08-08:09

    It's all about Jesus.

    08:10-08:12

Let's look at the first part of this sermon.

    08:14-08:20

It's an extended passage, so I'm going to be making some comments as we go through just to clarify some things.

    08:21-08:27

Paul says, "Men of Israel And you who fear God - listen.

    08:28-08:30

Now, men of Israel, those were Jewish people.

    08:30-08:36

"You who fear God" refers to Gentiles who converted to Judaism - the proselytes, ok?

    08:37-08:49

The God of this people, Israel, chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt.

    08:50-08:53

Ok, so he's covering a lot of Old Testament history here.

    08:53-08:57

We're talking about the promise that God made Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    08:57-08:58

    He chose them.

    08:59-09:01

    Remember His promise to Abraham.

    09:01-09:04

He said Abraham, you're going to receive a special land - a chunk of land.

    09:04-09:06

That's the geographic site of Israel.

    09:07-09:12

You're going to have descendants that will be as numerous as the stars in the sky, as the sand on the seashore.

    09:13-09:16

And that's the Jewish people, the Israelites, the nation of Israel.

    09:17-09:27

And the third part of that is God promised Abraham that through him would be a blessing that would be world and that was ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

    09:29-09:44

Recall because of a famine initially, they had gone to Egypt and because of their rapid multiplication let's say, the Egyptians started to fear them and they enslaved the Israelites in Egypt.

    09:46-10:49

Again, made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt and with uplifted arm he led them out of it that's the book of Exodus God led the Israelites out of Egypt under who was the leader then who was the leader Moses all right I didn't know there was going to be a test and for about 40 years he put up with them in the wilderness it's I got an interject this that phrase he put up with them people are like that can be interpreted one of two ways some people say no that literally is he cared for them or he carried them and other people say no no that Greek means he put up with them and you're like does it matter well if you have kids you know that both of those are true right because sometimes you carry them oh my little lamb precious let's be honest sometimes we just put up with them right and if you read the story of Israel okay I see kids looking at their moms right now.

    10:49-10:50

    "Is that true?" It's true.

    10:52-10:54

Your mom's smiling at you because you're in church right now.

    10:55-11:00

I'm telling you, son, there are times your parents just have to put up with you.

    11:00-11:00

    Amen?

    11:02-11:02

    Okay, did you see that?

    11:03-11:03

    Amen.

    11:04-11:13

Okay, so if you study the Exodus and the Bible, you see that there were times that God provided for them perfectly.

    11:14-11:17

And there were a lot of times God was putting up with them.

    11:19-11:20

    Interesting phrase.

    11:21-11:27

And after destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan - that was the promised land.

    11:27-11:28

    What's the seven nations?

    11:28-11:30

    Well, Deuteronomy 7:1 tells you.

    11:30-11:31

You can look that up later.

    11:32-11:36

After destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, He gave them their land as an inheritance.

    11:38-11:43

All this took about 450 years.

    11:47-11:48

Here's where the number came from.

    11:48-11:51

450 years - they spent 400 years in Egypt.

    11:52-11:54

They spent 40 years in the wilderness.

    11:55-12:01

And it took 10 years from the crossing of the Jordan into the Promised Land until they divided up the land among the tribes.

    12:03-12:04

    400 plus 40 plus 10.

    12:04-12:06

That's where Paul got that math.

    12:08-12:12

And after that, he gave them judges.

    12:13-12:14

Do you know what book Paul gave them?

    12:15-12:17

In the Old Testament, you read about the judges.

    12:20-12:24

Judges - ok, I'm just saying, if you're listening, I didn't say they were hard questions.

    12:25-12:30

The book of Judges - when we think of judges, we think of Judge Judy, right?

    12:30-12:33

With the black robe and the little doily and the gavel or whatever.

    12:33-12:35

But judges were like military leaders.

    12:35-12:36

    They were deliverers.

    12:38-12:41

He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

    12:41-12:42

    Remember Samuel?

    12:44-12:48

Samuel was a judge, he was a prophet, he was the king, a pointer, eventually.

    12:48-12:56

It says then, verse 21, "Then they asked for a king." And understand, if you read that passage, that was not a good thing.

    12:57-13:04

Israel said, "We want to have a king like all the other nations have a king." And God reminded them, "You have a king.

    13:05-13:05

    It's me.

    13:05-13:12

I'm your king." And Israel, the Bible says Israel rejected God in order to have a king.

    13:12-13:22

And they were warned, look, if you have a king, he's going to enlist your children into military, he's going to impose taxes, and they said, we don't care, we want to be like everybody else.

    13:25-13:28

Trying to be like everybody else is never a good plan.

    13:30-13:33

And God gave them exactly what they wanted.

    13:33-13:41

Which sometimes, that could be the worst thing for you, is if you persist in wanting something that God doesn't want you to have, sometimes God gives you what you want.

    13:43-13:44

    Not always a good thing.

    13:46-14:01

Look at the text, it says, "And God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin for 40 years." Okay, so those of you that have read this account in the Old Testament, Saul as a king - thumbs up or thumbs down?

    14:01-14:02

What kind of a king was he?

    14:03-14:04

    Yeah, thumbs down, right?

    14:06-14:11

Disobedient, disobedient, disobedient, Persistent and hard-hearted disobedience.

    14:12-14:15

And 40 years they dealt with that.

    14:16-14:42

Verse 22 says, "And when God had removed Saul, He raised up David to be their king, of whom He testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, "I will do all My will." You know, David was a man who - you read 2 Samuel 11 - he did some horrible things.

    14:43-14:45

He was not a perfect man at all.

    14:46-14:49

But you see, God knew David's heart.

    14:50-14:52

Even though he did the wrong thing, he repented.

    14:53-14:56

He said this is wrong, and he turned from his sin.

    14:56-14:58

And he had a heart that was seeking after the Lord.

    14:59-15:04

He had a heart that craved righteousness even though in the flesh, didn't always perform it.

    15:06-15:07

We see a lot of grace.

    15:09-15:22

Verse 23, "Of this man's offspring, of David's offspring, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as He promised." That's 2 Samuel 7.

    15:22-15:27

God promised David that one of His descendants would reign on the throne forever.

    15:29-16:04

is a descendant of David in the flesh. Before his coming, John, this is John the Baptist, John had proclaimed a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel and as John was finishing his course he said, "What do you suppose that I am? I am not he." Meaning people thought John the Baptist was the Messiah and he's like, "No, no, no. I'm not him." The Old Testament actually prophesied in Isaiah chapter 40 in Malachi chapter 3, the Old Testament prophesied that the Messiah would have a forerunner.

    16:04-16:05

    What's a forerunner?

    16:06-16:18

A forerunner was like if the king's traveling and coming to town, the forerunner would go ahead of the king just to make sure that the path was clear, everything was safe, coast is clear, so the king wasn't held up with any obstacles in the road.

    16:18-16:21

And John the Baptist was the forerunner of Christ.

    16:21-16:24

He came to prepare the way for Jesus.

    16:28-16:42

"What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. I am not the Messiah." He says, "No, but behold, after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie." John says, "I am not the Messiah. Let me tell you about the Messiah. He is coming.

    16:42-16:55

I am not even worthy to carry that guy's shoes, okay, because he is awesome and I am nothing." So, we'll pause there for a second. Here's the point of this history lesson.

    16:56-16:59

It's a very broad sweep of the Old Testament.

    17:01-17:03

But the point of the history lesson is this.

    17:03-17:09

All of Old Testament history, all the way up to John the Baptist, brings us to Jesus.

    17:10-17:15

That it wasn't some random events that God was like in the Old Testament, like constantly going, "Damage control!

    17:15-17:20

Oh no, I told Abraham he was going to have descendants, but they can't have any kids.

    17:21-17:22

What am I going to do?" He had a plan.

    17:23-17:24

    He already had that prepared.

    17:25-17:29

"Oh, no, the Israelites are in Egypt and they're slaves.

    17:29-17:31

What am I going to do? How am I going to get them out?" God had a plan.

    17:32-17:34

"And they're not listening to me.

    17:34-17:36

And they want a king now, and I'm their king.

    17:36-17:38

Why won't they listen?" God had a plan.

    17:38-17:40

And that's the point that Paul's making here.

    17:40-17:44

As you look throughout the history of Israel, God always had this plan.

    17:44-17:46

    It wasn't random events.

    17:47-17:49

Let me illustrate it this way in kind of a modern sense.

    17:51-17:55

A week and a day ago at our house, we had a ministry team meeting talking about finances.

    17:56-18:09

And when we have these meetings at our house, Aaron, my wife, will clean and rearrange the furniture, and she'll have food and drink ready, she'll have the kids ready, she'll have the overly friendly dog put away.

    18:10-18:21

And while she's getting the house ready for this meeting, even when the kids or the husband makes a mess, it doesn't stop her.

    18:21-18:22

    She takes care of it.

    18:22-18:26

Even when the sweeper breaks, it doesn't stop her.

    18:26-18:29

Even when the dog gets sick, it doesn't stop her.

    18:30-18:38

You see, she has this plan, and when she's getting the house ready for this meeting, all she's thinking about is, "Okay, I'm getting everything ready for this one event.

    18:38-18:47

We have this meeting, and I'm going to make sure that everything is ready for this meeting." But I want you to imagine with me for a second.

    18:47-18:55

Just imagine that you came over to our house, and you didn't know that we were having a meeting.

    18:56-18:57

You're just kind of sitting on our couch.

    18:57-19:00

You didn't know a meeting was coming up in a few hours.

    19:01-19:04

You're sitting on the couch and you're watching Aaron working.

    19:05-19:13

You might start to ask some questions like, "Wait a minute, why did Aaron arrange the table like that?

    19:13-19:15

"Why did Aaron put so much food out?

    19:15-19:17

"There's only four people in the family.

    19:18-19:22

Why would Aaron put 13 chairs in a circle?

    19:23-19:24

There's not that many people here.

    19:24-19:25

    It doesn't make any sense.

    19:26-19:28

Why is she making your husband get a bath?

    19:28-19:31

I don't understand why she's doing all these things.

    19:32-19:34

She's working, but it doesn't look like.

    19:35-19:37

She's doing anything that really makes sense.

    19:37-19:45

But then as you sat there, you saw the ministry leaders come and have the meeting and everybody says their goodbyes and leave.

    19:45-19:53

And after the meeting, you would look back earlier and say, "Now that makes sense. I understand why she did all that.

    19:53-19:55

Now I see why she had so much food out.

    19:56-19:57

Now I see why she had all those chairs out.

    19:58-20:08

It makes sense now." Now, we have a sovereign and all-powerful God who was doing exactly that.

    20:09-20:11

But he wasn't putting a house in order.

    20:11-20:15

understand what God was doing, was He was putting history in order.

    20:16-20:22

So just as Aaron's sweeping and mopping and dishes and doing - God was doing those kinds of things throughout history.

    20:22-20:24

I'm putting this all in order.

    20:25-20:27

Because He was preparing for a big event too.

    20:28-20:36

And the big event that God was preparing the entire world for was the single greatest event in history.

    20:37-20:38

    And that's the Incarnation.

    20:39-20:44

This one God Almighty Himself took on flesh and blood and walked among us.

    20:46-20:49

God wasn't arranging a living space, He was arranging an entire timeline.

    20:51-20:53

Scale of 1 to 10, how awesome is God?

    20:54-20:57

    Well, that's a conservative answer.

    20:59-21:02

So God was preparing for Jesus coming throughout history.

    21:03-21:10

And you read the Old Testament history, these prophets who lived in the history timeline, foretold the Messiah.

    21:10-21:23

They said exactly the details concerning His incarnation, concerning His sacrifice, concerning His resurrection, concerning His second coming, concerning His millennial reign on the earth, concerning His eternal rule.

    21:23-21:24

    All of history.

    21:25-21:29

From creation, to the law, to the incarnation, to today.

    21:31-21:32

    October 9, 2016.

    21:34-21:34

    To the future.

    21:37-21:43

See that God is circling all of this, He's arranging all of this around Jesus Christ.

    21:45-21:46

    God has a plan.

    21:47-21:48

He has a plan for history.

    21:48-21:49

    It's all about Jesus.

    21:49-21:50

    Secondly, write this down.

    21:50-21:51

He has a plan for salvation.

    21:53-21:55

    It's all about Jesus.

    21:56-21:58

    Verse 26.

    21:59-22:05

"Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham and those among you who fear God.

    22:07-22:12

To us has been sent the message of this salvation.

    22:15-22:29

For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize Him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning Him.

    22:31-22:37

And though they found in Him He was so guilt-worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have Him executed.

    22:37-22:47

And when they had carried out all that was written of Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb." We'll stop there for a second.

    22:47-22:49

God has a plan for salvation.

    22:49-22:50

    It's all about Jesus.

    22:50-22:52

Did you see that in verse 26?

    22:52-22:56

To us has been sent the message of this salvation.

    22:56-22:58

This is the purpose of the plan.

    22:59-23:11

Even despite everything that happened, Paul recounts this history, despite all of this arranging that God made for the coming of the Messiah, Jesus shows up and He's rejected by His own people.

    23:12-23:14

You're like, well, why did they reject Him?

    23:15-23:17

Well, the answer's right here in the text.

    23:17-23:22

I need you to sit up and pay really close attention to this because this hits you where you are here and now.

    23:22-23:24

    Why was Jesus Christ rejected?

    23:24-23:25

    Look at verse 27.

    23:28-23:33

because they did not recognize Him." Look at this next phrase.

    23:34-23:48

"Nor understand the utterances of the prophets." Jesus was rejected for the same reason then that He is now.

    23:50-23:51

You're going to want to write this down.

    23:52-23:57

If you reject the written Word, you're going to reject the living Word.

    23:59-24:05

If you reject the written Word, you're going to reject the living Word.

    24:06-24:09

You see, there's a glorious connection in Harvest Bible Chapel.

    24:09-24:11

We believe that God wrote a book.

    24:11-24:14

We believe the Bible is the Word of God.

    24:14-24:17

That's why we proclaim it without apology.

    24:19-24:30

But you see, there's a glorious connection that while we don't worship the Bible, we give the Bible the reverence God calls us to, because this reveals to us the God that we worship.

    24:33-24:41

So you need to dispense of the idea today that the Bible is irrelevant, because the truth is the Bible is the only relevant thing on the planet right now.

    24:42-25:08

You know that. We live in a world that is constantly bombarding us with lies from hell, and the only thing that's relevant is the Word of God. So you see, See, when people reject the written Word of God, they are going to reject the living Word of God because He is the One who is being testified about in this book.

    25:10-25:14

Romans 1 says people suppress the truth.

    25:14-25:16

They don't want to hear God's truth.

    25:16-25:19

They suppress the truth and unrighteousness and what happens?

    25:19-25:21

    They start worshiping stuff.

    25:21-25:25

They start embracing ungodly sexual relationships.

    25:25-25:29

They start approving of people who embrace ungodly sexual relationships.

    25:29-25:32

It's stuff that's happening right in front of our eyes.

    25:32-25:33

    And where does it start?

    25:33-25:36

It starts when you suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

    25:36-25:44

You say no to God's Word, that means you're saying no to the living Word, and it means you're opening yourself up to the garbage dump of sin.

    25:46-25:47

    That's the connection.

    25:48-25:56

In verse 30, "But God..." That's like the greatest phrase in the Bible.

    25:56-26:01

All this stuff happens, and it's like, "But God..." And then you know everything's about to change.

    26:02-26:06

"But God raised Him from the dead.

    26:07-26:12

And for many days He appeared to those who had come up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem.

    26:13-26:20

We who are now His witnesses to people, witnesses, that sounds familiar.

    26:21-26:23

Seems like we just talked about that for a year, right?

    26:24-26:42

And we bring you the good news that what God has promised to the fathers, this He has fulfilled to us, their children, by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second psalm.

    26:43-26:49

"For my son, today I have begotten you." That's Psalm 2:7.

    26:50-26:56

And as for the fact that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken in this way.

    26:57-26:59

    This is from Isaiah 55.

    27:00-27:10

"I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David." See, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Paul says that was a proof that Christ would raise from the dead.

    27:10-28:10

How could the Messiah have all the promises of David right David has this eternal promise given to him to his descendants but it's not going to do him any good if he's in the grave too right the the Messiah so he says that's proof just by virtue of receiving the promise of God verse 35 therefore he says also in another Psalm this is Psalm 1610 this is big proof text in the Old Testament for the resurrection you will not let your holy one. Seek corruption. That's a fancy way of saying you were not going to let the Messiah rot. He's not going to rot. Jesus didn't rot. He was put in the grave and instead of staying there and decaying, he rose from the dead. For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption. He says David's in his grave and he's rotting.

    28:12-28:17

But he whom God raised up did not see corruption.

    28:19-28:20

Do you notice how many times there?

    28:22-28:26

We saw it in verse 30, verse 33, verse 34, verse 37.

    28:26-28:28

God raised up. God raised up.

    28:28-28:30

    God raised up.

    28:31-28:32

    Key point.

    28:34-28:37

That even the death of Jesus Christ was part of God's plan.

    28:39-28:56

the death of Jesus didn't take God by surprise. God wasn't in heaven like they did what to my son? Like he knew ahead of time because ahead of time he was prophesying that he would raise from the dead. In order to raise from the dead he had to first die so God knew that was going to happen.

    28:59-29:31

Paul here says he rose from the dead we saw him and it was a fulfillment of the Scriptures. You see all this history all this prophecy this isn't just FYI it's about the plan of saving man from sin that's why again verse 26 this message of this salvation you see everything that God was doing it had this purpose of saving us from our sin.

    29:32-29:38

This plan revolves around a person, and the key event of the person is the resurrection.

    29:40-29:41

That leads us to part three.

    29:43-29:44

God has a plan for history.

    29:45-29:45

    It's all about Jesus.

    29:46-29:47

God has a plan for salvation.

    29:47-29:48

    It's all about Jesus.

    29:49-29:50

Let's bring it home, shall we?

    29:52-29:54

God has a plan, and you have a choice.

    29:55-29:57

And that's how Paul concludes this message.

    29:58-29:58

    You have a choice.

    30:01-30:04

You see, we're not preparing you to be on Jeopardy.

    30:04-30:18

If I'm ever on Jeopardy, and the Bible's one of the categories, give me some factoids, give me some nuggets, show me a chart or a graph or something that will help me get this information so I know some stuff about the Bible.

    30:18-30:24

If that's what you leave with, then you've wasted your time and I've failed.

    30:26-30:28

You have to do something with this information.

    30:29-30:43

You can't just walk out of here today and say, "Oh, interesting." Because according to the Bible, your eternity hinges on what you do with this message.

    30:44-30:48

So I want you to look very closely here at verses 38 and 39.

    30:49-30:50

    Paul brings it home.

    30:50-30:59

He says, "Let it be known to you, therefore, brothers." You see, that's Paul saying, "You've got to do something with this.

    31:00-31:07

You've got to know this, that through this man, forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

    31:08-31:23

And by him, everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be You cannot be freed by the law of Moses.

    31:25-31:26

    Stop there for a second.

    31:28-31:31

Freed from everything from which you cannot be freed by the law of Moses.

    31:31-31:33

    What does that mean?

    31:34-31:48

Well, if you read the Old Testament, the Old Testament law like Leviticus and Deuteronomy, if you read the Old Testament law for Israel, you realize that God was showing us the standard of righteousness, standard of morality.

    31:50-31:59

And when we study the Old Testament law, what we see about ourselves is that none of us can be good enough to earn a spot in Heaven.

    32:00-32:12

Like, someday I'm going to stand before God and He's going to say, "You did a good job." None of us can keep the rules in such a way that we've earned righteousness.

    32:14-32:20

Trying to keep the rules won't work Because you can't keep the rules.

    32:21-32:22

    And you haven't been.

    32:24-32:25

    It can't save you.

    32:26-32:29

Once in a while I meet somebody that's not convinced of that.

    32:30-32:36

I don't want anybody in here convinced that, yeah, I keep the rules, so we'll just do a little test.

    32:37-32:39

We'll reduce the law down to its simplest form.

    32:40-32:42

    That's the Ten Commandments.

    32:43-32:45

I want you to take your, you have your little half-sheet outline.

    32:45-32:47

I'm going to go through the 10 commandments very quickly.

    32:47-32:52

And every commandment that you've broken at some point in your life, I just want you to give yourself a checkmark.

    32:52-32:55

And then we're going to see how many commandments out of 10 that you've broken.

    32:56-32:56

    Are you ready?

    32:57-32:59

    Okay, first commandment.

    32:59-33:07

God says, "You shall have no other gods before me." So the question for you is, has the Lord God always been the priority in your life every time?

    33:07-33:11

You've never had anything in your life that was more important at the time, in the moment, than God?

    33:12-33:19

If at any point in your life anything was more important to you than God, then you have broken that commandment, and you need to give yourself a mark.

    33:20-33:23

The second commandment ties into that.

    33:23-33:26

You shall not make for yourself any idols, any graven images.

    33:26-33:32

Has there ever been something on the earth that you've worshipped that has had a higher priority in your life than God?

    33:32-33:37

    Maybe it's a person, maybe it's a vehicle, maybe it's a, I don't know, a PlayStation.

    33:37-33:43

Something in your life that has consumed your energy, and quite frankly, your worship?

    33:46-33:48

If so, then you've broken that commandment.

    33:48-33:49

How are we doing so far?

    33:49-33:50

    The third commandment.

    33:52-33:59

The third commandment - "You shall not use the Lord God's name in vain." What that literally means is misrepresenting God.

    34:01-34:04

It doesn't just mean swearing and attaching God's name to it.

    34:04-34:06

It means that you're misrepresenting God.

    34:08-34:13

Have you ever spoken in a way that misrepresents or dishonors God?

    34:15-34:16

    And you're guilty.

    34:16-34:17

    The fourth commandment.

    34:19-34:21

The fourth commandment is about the Sabbath.

    34:21-34:24

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

    34:25-34:27

God says you're to set a day aside a week.

    34:28-34:29

    No work.

    34:29-34:32

Just focus on worship and your relationship.

    34:33-34:35

    Have you always done that?

    34:35-34:40

Do you always deliberately set time aside to worship God?

    34:42-34:44

If not, then you're guilty of that one too.

    34:45-34:46

The Fifth Commandment is honor your father and mother.

    34:47-34:48

Have you always honored your parents?

    34:49-34:49

    Every time?

    34:51-34:53

Yes sir, no sir, yes ma'am, no ma'am.

    34:53-34:54

    Have you always done that?

    34:57-34:59

I already told you kids, your parents put up with you.

    35:01-35:01

    How are you doing there?

    35:03-35:04

The Sixth Commandment is do not murder.

    35:05-35:07

    "Oh, finally. Finally!

    35:08-35:13

I have never murdered anyone to death, ever." But hang on.

    35:13-35:16

Jesus said if you hate somebody, you've committed murder in your heart.

    35:19-35:25

Jesus said the attitude is the root of the action, and that's just as sinful.

    35:25-35:28

The question is when we talk about murder, have you ever hated someone?

    35:29-35:30

Like, well, how do you define that?

    35:30-35:35

Well, is there somebody in your life you just wish wasn't there anymore.

    35:36-35:38

I don't care if I ever see that person again.

    35:38-35:40

See, in your heart, you wish they were dead.

    35:40-35:42

You don't ever want to have any interaction with them.

    35:42-35:43

    You hate them.

    35:43-35:46

You don't want them in your sphere at all.

    35:47-35:49

Guilty, if you've ever felt that.

    35:50-35:52

The seventh commandment is do not commit adultery.

    35:54-36:04

God has this awesome gift of marriage and this awesome gift of a sexuality to be solely in the context of marriage.

    36:04-36:09

If you've ever misused that gift in any way, then you are guilty of committing adultery.

    36:10-36:11

    Are you still writing?

    36:12-36:13

The 8th Commandment is do not steal.

    36:14-36:15

Have you ever taken something that doesn't belong to you?

    36:16-36:21

Even if it's a paper clip from work, have you ever taken something that you know is not yours, but you take it?

    36:22-36:24

The 9th Commandment is do not bear false witness.

    36:25-36:26

Have you ever told a lie?

    36:29-36:56

time have you ever at any point you knew the truth but you deliberately said something else then the tenth commandment is do not covet what that means is God says look I provide you everything you need be satisfied with what I give you we say no no I wish I had what somebody else had all of a sudden we're not satisfied in God's provision for us we start coveting what God's given somebody else that's a sinful attitude have you ever done that Have you ever wished that you had what somebody else had?

    36:57-37:03

Their car, their house, their kids, their wife?

    37:05-37:08

Alright, sinless people, raise your hands.

    37:10-37:15

How many people scored yourselves a 10 out of 10 perfect sinner?

    37:16-37:18

    That's me. That's me.

    37:18-37:21

So you see the point is we can't keep the law.

    37:22-37:24

So this idea that, okay, those are the rules, I'm gonna try to keep the rules.

    37:25-37:25

    Guess what?

    37:25-37:26

    You already broke them.

    37:26-37:27

    You can't keep them.

    37:28-37:33

That's the whole purpose of the Old Testament law was to show us we're guilty, we're guilty.

    37:34-37:40

There's a holy God that's going to judge us and I stand before Him, a 10 out of 10 sinner.

    37:40-37:43

What are my chances that God's gonna be like, oh, that's okay.

    37:43-37:46

You spit in the face of the holy almighty, that's okay.

    37:46-37:47

    I am guilty.

    37:50-37:54

You see, that's what Paul is saying here, is we can't free ourselves from that.

    37:55-38:02

From now on, I'm going to... it doesn't matter from now on, because I have this 41-year track record of doing the wrong thing.

    38:04-38:06

    I'm guilty. You're guilty.

    38:10-38:14

But, look again, this is the good news.

    38:15-38:29

But, in Christ, verse 38, "Forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you." Your 10 out of 10 can be taken to a zero out of 10 and stay at a zero out of 10.

    38:30-38:33

That's forgiveness of sins proclaimed to you.

    38:33-38:36

And by Him, everyone who believes, everyone.

    38:37-38:38

Like I've done some terrible things.

    38:39-38:40

    Are you an everyone?

    38:42-38:43

    Are you an everyone?

    38:43-38:49

If you fall under the category of an everyone, then this applies to you.

    38:49-38:57

No matter what you've done, who you are, everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.

    38:58-39:10

You're trapped under the law, and here comes Jesus Christ with the keys of grace and opens up the cell door and says, "You're free." Like, "But I've done all these wrong things." You're forgiven.

    39:11-39:12

    You're restored.

    39:12-39:14

    You're free.

    39:15-39:16

    Freed from sin.

    39:17-39:18

Freed from the penalty of sin.

    39:18-39:19

    Freed from judgment.

    39:20-39:21

    Freed from condemnation.

    39:21-39:24

Freed from guilt. Freed from shame.

    39:24-39:30

You have literally everything to gain by receiving Jesus Christ.

    39:31-39:35

The only thing that you have to lose is God's wrath.

    39:37-39:47

But, if you're sitting here today and you choose not to receive Christ, you literally have everything to lose in this life and in the next.

    39:48-39:51

Let's look at the last two verses for today.

    39:52-39:58

"Beware therefore lest what is said in the prophets should come about." This quote is from Habakkuk 1:5.

    39:59-40:00

    "Look, you scoffers!

    40:00-40:02

    Be astounded and perish!

    40:03-40:14

For I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe even if one tells it to you." That passage - we walked through it back a couple of years ago.

    40:15-40:17

And that passage is about God's judgment.

    40:18-40:28

And Paul is using that warning as an application concerning the Gospel of Jesus Christ, saying this, "You still want to reject God?

    40:30-40:33

You still want to turn your back on God's grace?

    40:37-40:40

You're in for an astounding death.

    40:41-40:43

    That's the description of hell.

    40:46-41:02

Even if hypothetically, if I went to hell for a day, and I saw the horrors, I saw the Bible describes the weeping, the gnashing of teeth, and Revelation says the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever.

    41:03-41:28

If I went to hell for a day, and I saw and heard the horrors of this existence apart from God because of rejecting this glorious gift of His grace, even if I went there and saw all of that, I couldn't adequately describe it to you.

    41:28-42:09

That's why he says I'm doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe tells you. It's worse than I can tell you. I could spend the next six hours up here doing a Bible study about hell and trying to paint the picture of how horrible of a destination it is. I would not even be scratching the surface because it's infinitely worse than that. To reject your Creator, to choose instead of enjoying His presence eternally, instead to choose to be apart from His presence This point is not receiving Jesus Christ is the worst decision that you will ever make.

    42:12-42:18

Now when we talk about rejecting Jesus, there might be somebody here saying, "I've never rejected." And we think of rejection as like this spiteful thing.

    42:19-42:23

Like somebody shared the gospel with you, and you like swear in their face.

    42:23-42:24

    You're like, "No way!

    42:24-42:28

I don't want anything to do with that bum!" It's not like this spiteful rejection.

    42:31-43:02

Christ is also things like apathy. You just don't care. You say, "Oh yeah, he's talking about Jesus again. Yeah, he's talking about Jesus. Okay, what's for lunch?" Just apathy. You just don't care. You're hearing the message, you just don't really care. Indifference. Huh, interesting. Interesting points he made today. Went a little long, but... Or even a half-hearted attitude. Jesus calls that being lukewarm. He said that makes him want to vomit, literally. Half-hearted attitude.

    43:03-43:29

Like, Jesus is just alright with me, but I'm not one of those, like, radical born-again witnessing, like, reading the Bible Christians. Well, then you're not a Christian at all. If the life of Christ isn't in you, and Christ hasn't changed your appetites, and you have this desire to pursue God and the things of God, then you're not a Christian. You don't have to spitefully reject God to reject God.

    43:32-43:54

You can smile and say no thank you. You can smile and say maybe someday I'll get to. That's still rejection. Jesus doesn't offer light options. Okay? There's not like this gluten-free menu that he has to say oh you don't want to be a you don't want my Holy Spirit in you you don't want to be like one of those Those radical church people?

    43:54-44:00

Oh, okay, well, take a look at our brochure here because we might have a package that would better suit your lifestyle.

    44:00-44:02

    Jesus doesn't have that.

    44:04-44:08

Believing in Jesus Christ means this - I'm all in.

    44:10-44:12

I receive Jesus Christ by faith.

    44:12-44:17

I am opening my heart to the transformation that His Holy Spirit brings.

    44:18-44:21

I am going to change by His power.

    44:22-44:28

I am going to repent. I am going to actively and intentionally turn from my sin.

    44:28-44:35

I'm done forever with my old life. I'm pursuing God with every cell in my body.

    44:35-44:37

Anything less than that is nothing.

    44:40-44:44

At the end of the day, you have a choice.

    44:46-44:47

It's not about the church that you attended.

    44:49-44:52

It's not about how many small group outreaches you were a part of.

    44:53-44:55

It's not about how good of a Christian your mother was.

    44:57-45:01

Paul makes it very clear here what matters is what you do with Jesus Christ.

    45:02-45:03

    What you do with Him.

    45:05-45:06

    We know His desire.

    45:06-45:08

His desire is that all men should be saved.

    45:08-45:10

He's willing that none should perish.

    45:10-45:13

His gift of salvation is being extended to you.

    45:16-45:16

    Have you received it?

    45:18-45:19

    You have a choice.

    45:20-45:21

    It's all about Jesus.

    45:22-45:25

I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please, as our worship team comes up.

    45:25-45:26

I'm going to lead us in a prayer.

    45:27-45:31

Maybe there's somebody here today that says, "You know what? I've been playing church games.

    45:32-45:37

I need to receive Christ." You need to go back and tell one of the members of the prayer team, "Hey, we need to pray.

    45:38-45:44

We need to pray about my walk with Christ." Maybe you're sitting here today and you need to pray for somebody else.

    45:44-46:28

Maybe you have a family member or a friend or a co-worker does not know the Lord. Maybe you need to pray for them. Somebody from our prayer team back at the sign would love to pray for that person with you. Please take this moment. The Lord invites you and the Lord moves when we pray. Father in heaven, I thank you for your glorious gospel. And none of us are surprised that when today we read the longest sermon in the Bible given by the Apostle Paul, we're not surprised that the whole sermon circles around the person of Jesus Christ.

    46:30-46:36

Paul doesn't, he doesn't waste time talking about lesser things.

    46:37-46:41

It's right to the heart of the matter that God, you've had this plan throughout history.

    46:43-46:50

Even when Adam and Eve fell into sin, You made this promise of the offspring of Eve crushing the head of the enemy.

    46:51-46:56

You've had this plan that circles around Jesus.

    46:56-46:59

You've brought us this salvation that circles around Jesus.

    47:00-47:02

And it's not about our works.

    47:02-47:09

It's not about what we try to do or what we, the rules we make of things that we refuse to do.

    47:09-47:13

It's not about us trying to keep the rules because Father, we've seen this morning that we cannot.

    47:16-47:22

We need freed by the one who died on the cross in our place.

    47:23-47:29

By the one who rose from the dead so that the life that we forfeited in the Garden of Eden could be restored.

    47:32-47:41

The relationship with you, the shameless, guiltless walk, the pronouncement that you've given us.

    47:42-47:44

We are not guilty of sin anymore.

    47:46-47:48

We go from being your enemies to being your children.

    47:50-47:51

    It all circles around Jesus.

    47:53-47:55

Father, I pray for those today who need to make a choice.

    47:57-48:02

Those who maybe think that they're in good standing with you because their mom brought them to church.

    48:03-48:03

    That doesn't do it.

    48:04-48:11

Those who think they're in good standing with you because they've never intentionally really hurt somebody too bad.

    48:11-48:12

    That doesn't matter.

    48:14-48:19

What matters is receiving this gift of grace by faith.

    48:22-48:24

Father, I pray that You would open hearts here.

    48:26-48:32

Those of us who do know You, I pray that You would give us Your compassion for those who don't.

    48:34-48:39

Father, we praise your name for this plan.

    48:41-48:42

We praise your name for this person.

    48:44-48:52

We find that in Jesus Christ, you saved us from your own wrath.

    48:55-49:01

Father, for our last couple of minutes here today, let this be a place of worship and prayer.

    49:02-49:04

We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  • 00:00-00:01

    Five years today.

    00:02-00:04

    Can you believe that?

    00:04-00:06

That this church has been in existence for five years?

    00:07-00:12

On one hand, it seems like the church just launched a couple of months ago.

    00:13-00:24

But on the other hand, it seems like I don't really remember what life was like before Harvest Bible Chapel, before the Lord brought you folks into my life to do ministry.

    00:26-00:54

So thankful. So thankful. Speaking of things that happened a long time ago, I want to take you back to a much earlier chapter in my life when I was much younger and in much better shape. And some of you might not know this. Some of you do. But for eight years or so, I was a professional wrestler.

    00:55-00:55

    I'm retired.

    00:57-00:58

But I've got to tell you this story.

    01:01-01:06

That when you start out, you're basically-- you get beat by everybody.

    01:08-01:12

And I took my share of beatings and kept at it, kept at it.

    01:12-01:25

And a few years into my somewhat illustrious career, I was booked to be the main event against King Kong Bundy.

    01:26-01:29

How many people here know who King Kong Bundy is?

    01:30-01:31

OK, some of you have no idea.

    01:31-01:31

    Google him.

    01:31-01:32

    Not now.

    01:33-01:34

    Just Google him.

    01:35-01:38

King Kong Bundy is like this 450-pound monster.

    01:38-01:40

He was famous back in the '80s.

    01:41-01:46

But I was booked to be main event at this show against King Kong Bundy, and I was so excited.

    01:46-01:48

I was going to tear him apart.

    01:48-01:49

    I just couldn't wait.

    01:50-01:51

    Sorry.

    01:53-01:54

I just couldn't wait for the match.

    01:56-02:01

And I remember Darren and a friend of ours drove out-- it was in Columbus, Ohio-- drove out to see this match.

    02:01-02:09

And I was so excited because this is a guy that I watched in the '80s, and now we're in the late '90s.

    02:09-02:14

And there was a problem, though.

    02:15-02:22

I got word that King Kong Bundy forgot his wrestling gear.

    02:24-02:27

Yeah, he forgot his wrestling gear.

    02:28-02:31

And my question was, how in the world does that even happen?

    02:33-02:43

Now, let's pretend for a second-- I know some of you are judging me for my past career choices or whatever, but I want you to just walk down this path with me.

    02:43-02:46

Let's pretend for a second that you are a professional wrestler.

    02:46-02:47

Can you do that for a second?

    02:49-02:50

Can you just pretend that you're a professional wrestler?

    02:51-02:51

    Give yourself a name.

    02:52-02:52

    Go ahead.

    02:54-02:56

Pretend that you're a professional wrestler, OK?

    02:56-02:59

Now, you're booked to wrestle on a show.

    03:00-03:04

So let's write down all of the things that you might need to wrestle on the show.

    03:05-03:06

    Any ideas?

    03:08-03:10

Yeah, how about wrestling gear, right?

    03:11-03:15

But somehow that was the thing that he forgot to bring.

    03:17-03:21

Well, that word got to me, and I went back and talked to him about that.

    03:22-03:24

And I said, what's going on?

    03:25-03:26

    He's like, I'm so embarrassed.

    03:26-03:27

    I forgot my gear.

    03:27-03:28

    This has never happened before.

    03:30-03:36

But I think, kind of looking back, you know, history in the rearview mirror sometimes gets a little clearer.

    03:37-03:38

I think I know what really happened there.

    03:40-03:40

    He was scared.

    03:43-03:45

At least that's the story that I'm sticking with.

    03:46-03:51

OK, so you're a pro wrestler, and there's one thing that you need to do your job, just one thing, literally.

    03:52-03:53

    And that's the wrestling gear.

    03:54-03:57

OK, so let's look at other areas of life.

    03:57-04:02

If you're a deer hunter, what's the one thing that you need to hunt deer?

    04:03-04:04

    A gun, right.

    04:04-04:05

    You need a gun.

    04:06-04:08

    OK, let's say that you're a painter.

    04:08-04:11

What's the one thing that you need to do your job if you're a painter?

    04:13-04:15

    You need a paintbrush, exactly.

    04:16-04:21

Okay, if you're a drummer, what do you need in order to do your job?

    04:21-04:27

You need one thing, you need, say it, you need drums, right?

    04:29-04:34

Okay, so if you're a church, what's the one thing that you need to be the church?

    04:36-04:37

    You need a building?

    04:39-04:43

No, I think we've seen in the last five years that you can have church without a building.

    04:44-04:45

    Do you need an office?

    04:46-04:51

No, I think we've also seen that you can have church without an office building somewhere.

    04:51-04:53

    Do you need pyrotechnics?

    04:54-04:57

Well, we've discovered that you don't need pyrotechnics to have the church.

    04:57-05:00

Do you need the world's greatest preacher in order to have a church?

    05:01-05:04

This church has discovered that you don't need the world's best preacher to have a church.

    05:06-05:13

You can get by without any of these things, but there's one ingredient that the church can't do business without.

    05:15-05:16

And that is the Holy Spirit.

    05:18-05:22

How foolish is the wrestler that shows up to do his job without his wrestling boots?

    05:23-05:26

How foolish is the deer hunter that goes out into the woods without his gun?

    05:27-05:31

How foolish is the painter that shows up on the job site and doesn't have a brush?

    05:33-05:37

How foolish is the drummer who shows up to the gig and doesn't have a drum set.

    05:40-05:50

None of those even pale in comparison to how foolish is the church that tries to do the work of the church without the Holy Spirit.

    05:52-05:53

    That's our theme this year.

    05:53-06:01

We're going to be talking about the unstoppable church, because on our own, we are quite stoppable.

    06:02-06:09

And as we see in the book of Acts, including this passage today, when the Holy Spirit is at work, the church is unstoppable.

    06:09-06:10

So do you have your outline?

    06:13-06:16

Why the Holy Spirit is the most important person in the church.

    06:16-06:19

You're going to see it very clearly in this passage.

    06:19-06:23

I want you to turn with me to the book of Acts in chapter 13.

    06:26-06:29

Acts 13. While you're turning there, just a quick review.

    06:29-06:46

What brings us to this passage was everything that we walked through last year. We saw in Acts chapter 1, Jesus promised the disciples that we would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us, and we would be His witnesses.

    06:48-06:55

And we saw throughout the book of Acts, the Holy Spirit did come to indwell all believers, and those early disciples began witnessing.

    06:56-06:59

The church grew as many people came to believe in Christ.

    07:01-07:10

But the religious leaders were constantly trying to stop all of this Jesus talk, and that culminated in the execution of a young preacher named Stephen.

    07:12-07:19

This execution scattered the church, but it didn't stop the religious leaders from pursuing Christians.

    07:21-07:31

Especially one persecutor - a man named Saul, who met Jesus while he was on the way to arrest Christians.

    07:32-07:34

Paul was on the way to arrest Christians, not Jesus.

    07:36-07:44

Then God opened the door for Peter to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles, and that changed the course of history.

    07:44-07:49

That's why you're sitting here today because of the way the Lord brought the Gospel to the Gentiles.

    07:51-08:01

Even the king's attack on the church - talking about Herod, we looked at him a couple of weeks ago - even his attack on the church couldn't stop the power of God.

    08:01-08:08

Today in your outline, why the Holy Spirit is the most important person in the church, you're going to see it very clearly in this passage number 1.

    08:09-08:12

Only the Holy Spirit can empower ministry.

    08:13-08:15

Only the Holy Spirit can empower ministry.

    08:16-08:21

And as we look at Acts 13, understand that we're at a major turning point in the book of Acts.

    08:21-08:24

The first 12 chapters were basically about Peter.

    08:25-08:28

The whole rest of the book of Acts is about Paul.

    08:28-08:34

The first 12 chapters dealt mainly how the gospel was going to Jewish people, the nation of Israel.

    08:35-08:42

The rest of the book of Acts focuses on how the gospel spread throughout the world and went to the Gentiles.

    08:44-09:33

Acts 13.1 says, "Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers." Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, "Mernusius went back to Antioch, the Bible says they took John Mark with them.

    09:34-09:35

    Look at your text here.

    09:35-09:37

It says they were at the church at Antioch.

    09:37-09:38

First of all, there were prophets.

    09:39-09:40

    What is a prophet?

    09:40-09:42

That's just another way of saying preacher.

    09:43-09:48

Now, in the Bible, prophets would sometimes tell about future events.

    09:49-09:54

But understand that prophecy doesn't always necessarily mean telling the future.

    09:54-09:58

It literally just means proclaiming God's Word.

    09:59-10:01

Do we have prophets in our day?

    10:01-10:04

Well, God's not giving more biblical revelation.

    10:05-10:09

I'm not going to show up at church next week and say, hey, God gave me a new book in the Bible I want to share with you.

    10:09-10:12

We're just going to tuck that in there right behind revelation.

    10:14-10:16

    The biblical revelation is done.

    10:17-10:24

But understand, when I get up, or Mark or anybody else gets up here and preaches the Word of God, we're fulfilling the role of a prophet.

    10:25-10:27

saying this is the Word of God.

    10:29-10:32

So it says the church at Antioch - prophets and teachers.

    10:33-10:34

    What are teachers?

    10:34-10:41

Teachers are people and are people like Dan Thompson had talked about in the small group video.

    10:42-10:50

People that the Holy Spirit gifts to help people get a clear understanding of the truth of God's Word.

    10:51-10:53

    Teachers have that spiritual gift.

    10:54-10:56

and take the Word of God and explain it in a clear way.

    10:57-11:05

And people often at this point would ask, "Okay, well, what's the difference then between a prophet and a teacher?" And here's the answer.

    11:06-11:07

    The difference is minimal.

    11:08-11:09

    The difference is minimal.

    11:10-11:14

There's some slight nuances maybe in style or approach, but the difference is minimal.

    11:14-11:20

Both people are equipped and gifted by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the Word of God.

    11:21-11:22

    So who were these people?

    11:23-11:24

You see the list there in verse 1.

    11:24-11:25

Barnabas, we're going to talk about him.

    11:26-11:28

    Simeon, who was called Niger.

    11:29-11:31

    That just means black.

    11:31-11:32

Why did he get that nickname?

    11:33-11:34

    The Bible doesn't tell us.

    11:35-11:36

    Was he dark-complected?

    11:37-11:40

Did he have a favorite set of black pajamas that he wore?

    11:40-11:41

    I don't know.

    11:41-11:42

    That was just his nickname.

    11:43-11:45

    Lucius of Cyrene.

    11:45-11:46

And look at his next name.

    11:47-11:50

Menean, a member of the court of Herod, the tetrarch.

    11:51-11:53

There's different ways that that phrase is translated.

    11:53-11:55

He was a member of the court of Herod.

    11:55-11:58

Some translations say he was a lifelong friend.

    11:59-12:00

    The Greek word is interesting.

    12:03-12:21

The Greek word can literally be translated "foster brother." So whatever the situation or relationship was, Luke is pointing out here that this guy grew up in the family or with the family of Herod.

    12:21-12:25

Do you remember the stuff we had already learned about the Herod family?

    12:25-12:26

    Herod the Great?

    12:27-12:28

    Herod the Tetrarch?

    12:30-12:34

Mentioned here, this is the same Herod from Luke 23, verse 7.

    12:34-12:36

The Herod they brought Jesus to.

    12:37-12:49

But this man who was a prophet or a teacher in this church, the Bible says that he had a lifelong relationship with Herod's family.

    12:51-12:54

Normally when we read something like that we can sort of skim past it.

    12:54-12:57

Oh, that's an interesting little factoid. I just want to pause for one second.

    12:58-13:03

And let this be a great encouragement to you. You know, your past doesn't have to define who you are.

    13:04-13:09

And your past relationships and associations don't have to define who you are.

    13:10-13:18

This guy had a lifelong close relationship with the most wicked family maybe ever in history.

    13:18-13:21

Looking at the political scene today, some people might debate that.

    13:22-13:23

But this family was extremely wicked.

    13:24-13:30

Remember, Herod the Great was the one that said, "Let's kill all the male babies two and under," because he was trying to kill Jesus as an infant.

    13:31-13:32

    That's this family.

    13:33-13:36

And this guy, this Manan, grew up in that house!

    13:37-13:38

Could you imagine growing up in Herod the Great's house?

    13:39-13:40

Could you imagine what that was like?

    13:43-13:46

You see, it would have been real easy for the church to shun this guy.

    13:46-13:49

To say, "We don't want him to be part of this." Do you know who he grew up with?

    13:49-13:51

Do you know who he's always been tight with?

    13:52-13:52

    The Herod.

    13:53-13:54

He didn't have anything to do with him.

    13:54-13:55

    He's garbage.

    13:56-13:57

But the church didn't treat him like that.

    13:57-13:59

He was a pillar in the church.

    13:59-14:07

And I think that Luke let us know about this background just to remind us of the transforming power of the gospel.

    14:07-14:08

That's who he might have been.

    14:08-14:10

That might have been the relationships he had.

    14:11-14:17

But now, he's one of the preachers and teachers at this incredible, booming church.

    14:18-14:19

Don't let your past define you.

    14:19-14:21

    Let Jesus Christ define you.

    14:22-14:22

    Alright?

    14:24-14:26

So much more we can say about that.

    14:27-14:28

Look at the next name on the list.

    14:31-14:32

    Ann Saul.

    14:34-14:36

We're going to talk about him more in a second.

    14:36-14:41

the Saul who met Christ on the way to arrest Christians.

    14:43-14:44

    Look at verse 2.

    14:44-15:11

"While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then after fasting and praying, they laid their hands on them and sent them off." So being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

    15:13-15:25

When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the Word of God in the synagogue of the Jews, and they had John to assist them.

    15:25-15:30

That's John Mark, that's Barnabas' cousin that they took back from Jerusalem.

    15:31-15:35

So Cyprus was an island in the Mediterranean Sea.

    15:35-15:38

We learned from Acts chapter 4 that this was Barnabas' hometown.

    15:40-15:47

So this was sort of a welcome back cotter kind of thing, that Barnabas went back to do ministry where he grew up.

    15:50-16:29

But I want you to notice here specifically in verse 2 and in verse 4, the Bible makes it very clear that the work of this ministry is being done and attributed to the Holy Spirit. He is empowering all of it. Look at verse 2. It says, "The Holy Spirit set these people apart." Verse 4, "The Holy Spirit sent the people out." The Word of God is being so clear that this wasn't just some idea that Barnabas or some idea that Saul had, like, "Hey, I got this idea for a mission trip. Let's do it." That the Holy Spirit was equipping and sending and and empowering these people to do ministry.

    16:31-16:33

The Holy Spirit does the work.

    16:33-16:35

You say, "Well, Pastor Jeff, what's our part?

    16:35-16:36

    Are we just robots?

    16:36-16:39

Are we just puppets on a string?" Absolutely not.

    16:39-16:41

    We do have a part.

    16:41-16:45

And our part, biblically, is called walking in the Spirit.

    16:49-16:56

Our part is to allow ourselves to yield to the workings of the Holy Spirit.

    16:59-17:01

In other words, we need to tune in.

    17:01-17:07

We need to be sensitive to what God's Holy Spirit wants to do.

    17:07-17:08

    That's our part.

    17:09-17:11

Like, well, how do I do that?

    17:12-17:13

How can I be more sensitive?

    17:14-17:16

You know, you talk about the Holy Spirit speaking to me.

    17:16-17:23

We watched this video where people were saying I was talking to God and He told me this and He equipped me for this and He empowered me for this.

    17:23-17:27

And how can I tune in to what God wants from me?

    17:30-17:33

I want you to think of it this way before we look at the how.

    17:34-17:35

Think of the concept this way.

    17:35-17:37

I want you to think about radio programming.

    17:40-17:44

You know, right now, radio programming is being broadcast.

    17:46-17:48

    It happens all the time.

    17:48-17:49

    It's happening right this minute.

    17:50-17:59

Even though you can't hear the radio broadcasts, you can't hear a radio station right now unless one of you has a secret earpiece or something, which you better not.

    18:01-18:03

But right now, there's radio broadcasts happening.

    18:04-18:05

    We don't hear it.

    18:06-18:08

But right now, there are songs being played.

    18:09-18:11

There are talk shows that are spouting opinions.

    18:13-18:17

There are sports radio shows that are lamenting the pirate season.

    18:19-18:21

    There's news being reported.

    18:21-18:22

    There are commercials being aired.

    18:23-18:25

That's happening right now, though we can't hear it.

    18:27-18:29

But I want you to think about this.

    18:29-18:35

When you get in your car after the service and drive to wherever you're going, it's still happening.

    18:35-18:38

These broadcasts are still happening even if you don't hear them.

    18:38-18:42

But if you want to know what's going on, you simply have to do what?

    18:43-18:47

You turn on the radio and you tune in to a station.

    18:47-18:48

    Are you with me?

    18:50-18:55

Because in the same way, the Holy Spirit - God's Holy Spirit is present with us.

    18:56-18:57

    He is here right now.

    18:57-18:59

    He resides in us.

    19:00-19:01

He doesn't leave and come back.

    19:03-19:07

If you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit lives in you.

    19:07-19:16

We don't work to earn His presence or to tap into His power or to glean His wisdom or to follow His direction.

    19:17-19:27

What we need to do as individuals, as families, as churches, our job is to simply tune in to hear what he's saying.

    19:29-19:32

Like, okay, how do we do that?

    19:34-19:40

What needs to happen in order to hear his broadcast, in order to get good reception?

    19:41-19:45

Well, I think it's very clear in the text.

    19:45-19:48

Do you see it? Look back at the verses again.

    19:49-19:53

Verse 2, it says, "While they were..." What does your Bible say?

    19:55-19:56

    Go ahead, say it out.

    19:56-19:59

"While they were worshiping." Right, worshiping.

    20:00-20:03

The Greek word for worship, this is interesting.

    20:03-20:07

You know, the Septuagint was the Greek translation of the Old Testament.

    20:07-20:09

They had a copy of the Old Testament that was in Greek.

    20:09-20:21

And the Greek word used for worship here is also the same Greek word that's used in the Old Testament, the Greek translation of the Old Testament, to refer to the priests.

    20:23-20:30

In other words, this word for worshipping can also be translated ministering.

    20:32-20:34

Like, what's the point? The point is this.

    20:34-20:38

Serving Jesus Christ is an act of worship.

    20:39-20:42

When I say worship, what's the first thing we think of?

    20:42-20:43

we think of the music, right?

    20:43-20:45

That's the first thing I think of.

    20:45-20:46

    Like, let's worship.

    20:46-20:49

I think, ok, here's Darren up here leading us in worship.

    20:50-20:54

But worship is so much more than that.

    20:54-20:57

It is that, but it's so much more than that too.

    20:57-21:03

The reason we worship in music is because we're called to love the Lord our God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

    21:04-21:07

Worshiping in music allows us to worship God in our emotions.

    21:10-21:13

That's not the sum total of what worship is.

    21:15-21:19

When you serve Christ, that is an act of worship.

    21:20-21:29

That is you saying Jesus Christ is worth my time and energy, and I'm going to show Him that by doing things in His name.

    21:30-21:31

    By serving Him.

    21:32-21:35

They were worshiping, or they were ministering.

    21:37-21:48

So if you want to get tuned in the Holy Spirit's, evaluate, are you worshiping Him by serving Him?

    21:49-21:50

    What's the next thing?

    21:50-21:51

    How do we tune in?

    21:52-21:54

How do we tune in to what the Holy Spirit is doing?

    21:54-21:56

What the Holy Spirit might be calling us to?

    21:56-21:59

What the Holy Spirit's wanting to teach us or how He wants to guide us?

    21:59-22:00

    Look at the next thing.

    22:00-22:02

While they were worshiping the Lord and...

    22:02-22:02

    What's the next thing?

    22:05-22:06

I know you don't want to say it.

    22:07-22:10

You don't want to say it because as a culture we don't do this.

    22:11-22:12

    What's it say?

    22:13-22:13

    Fasting.

    22:15-22:16

Do you know what fasting is?

    22:17-22:20

Because I don't think many people really understand what fasting is.

    22:21-22:25

It's like, oh yeah, I've got to get blood work done at the doctor and they told me not to eat for a few hours.

    22:26-22:28

    That's your idea of fasting.

    22:29-22:37

And fasting is making that choice to go without food purposes of seeking the Lord.

    22:39-22:49

And for some people, maybe because of health reasons, you can't abstain from food, but fasting can be anything that distracts my heart and mind.

    22:50-22:55

I'm just going to get it off the table for a while so I can just focus on God.

    22:56-22:58

    We don't do that, church.

    23:01-23:05

Collectively, consistently, Passionately? We don't do that.

    23:07-23:11

Now interestingly about fasting, is it commanded? No.

    23:12-23:15

Fasting is not commanded in the New Testament.

    23:16-23:17

    But it is assumed.

    23:18-23:19

    Right?

    23:20-23:22

It's not commanded, but it's assumed.

    23:22-23:22

What do you mean by that?

    23:22-23:24

    Well, look at Matthew 6.

    23:24-23:28

Jesus said when you pray, don't pray like the hypocrites.

    23:29-23:31

So Jesus was assuming that we would do what?

    23:33-24:07

assuming we would pray he says just don't pray like these people Jesus said when you give don't be like the hypocrites so Jesus was assuming that we'd what that we give as an act of worship Jesus also in Matthew 6 says and when you fast don't be like the hypocrites so Jesus was assuming that we would what? Fast. We live in such a self-centered, all about me, culture right now.

    24:08-24:20

That this idea of denying yourself of anything is completely just not even on our map. We promote this in our culture. Why should you say no to anything?

    24:22-24:23

You want to eat it, eat it.

    24:23-24:24

You want to buy it, buy it.

    24:24-24:29

You want to get intimate with it, get intimate with it.

    24:30-24:33

We as a culture, we don't say no to anything.

    24:34-24:37

And fasting is one of the greatest resources.

    24:37-24:38

    Hear me church.

    24:40-24:43

Fasting is one of the greatest resources that God has given us.

    24:45-25:20

And I think it's the most underused resource that God's given us to say, I'm gonna go without for a while because I just want to focus on God I just want to put my mind and heart on what God's Holy Spirit would want to teach me So that means I'm not gonna worry about food or eating. I'm gonna use that lunchtime I'm gonna use that mealtime and pray and think about You know God's Word and open myself up to say I'm here. I Commend that to you Like man, I've never done that before I I encourage you to start.

    25:20-25:24

Maybe starting for you is, you know what, for the next three days I'm going to skip lunch.

    25:24-25:28

And I'm going to use that time to just kind of get God's Word and be quiet before the Lord.

    25:28-25:29

    Start there.

    25:31-25:33

Or start with a one or two day fast.

    25:33-25:34

I'm just going to go with that.

    25:34-25:37

I just want to focus on my walk with the Lord.

    25:37-25:44

I want to focus on that love relationship that He's given me and not let anything else get in the way.

    25:46-25:48

Fasting is not commanded, but it is assumed.

    25:49-25:51

And it's connected to the next thing.

    25:53-25:54

    Look down at verse 3.

    25:54-25:59

It says, "Then after fasting and..." What does your Bible say?

    26:01-26:02

    Praying.

    26:03-26:04

    Praying is connected to fasting.

    26:06-26:07

    Prayer is our lifeline.

    26:07-26:10

Prayer is our declaration of dependence.

    26:12-26:20

And as individuals, as a church, These are ways that the Lord has given us to tune in, to sharpen our ear to hear the Spirit.

    26:20-26:21

    He's here.

    26:21-26:23

    If you're a born-again believer, He's here.

    26:23-26:26

    But are you tuned in?

    26:28-26:29

    Like, man, you know what?

    26:29-26:32

It's been a while since I've really been tuned in, since I've really been passionate about seeking the Lord.

    26:33-26:33

    Where do I start?

    26:34-26:35

Here it is - worship, fasting, and prayer.

    26:36-26:36

    Start there.

    26:39-26:40

    God's already done the work.

    26:42-26:42

All you need to do is listen.

    26:44-26:45

    You want a Spirit-empowered ministry?

    26:46-26:53

You and we - you and we and I collectively - we've got to tune in.

    26:55-26:57

Only the Holy Spirit can empower ministry.

    26:57-26:59

Secondly, only He can fight our battles.

    27:00-27:02

Only He can fight our battles.

    27:03-27:05

    Look at verse 6.

    27:06-27:07

    Okay, so we're in Cyprus.

    27:08-28:05

to Salamis. Mark was with them. Verse 6 says, "When they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they came upon a certain magician." Now when we say magician, we don't mean like this guy's running around pulling rabbits out of hats or like, you know, "Hey, go dig a cord, I'm going to show you something." This was occultic stuff okay so this was a an occultic magician a Jewish false prophets named bar Jesus ok that's not a connection to the Christ that just means the son of Joshua is what that means that was his one of his names because he was with the pro council that's a governor sergius James Paulus, a man of intelligence, who summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the Word of God.

    28:05-28:12

So this governor hears what these preachers are going through, telling people this Gospel message, and this governor's like, "Hey, get those guys.

    28:13-28:15

I want to hear this message." What are they telling people?

    28:15-28:16

"I really want to hear this.

    28:16-28:25

This is interesting. Get them." But Elimas, the magician, That's another name for Bar-Jesus, Elimus.

    28:27-28:35

And your Bible says parenthetically, "For that is the meaning of his name." Elimus is a transliteration of an Arabic word that means magic.

    28:35-28:36

    That's all.

    28:36-28:37

    Just another nickname.

    28:38-28:51

"To Elimus, Bar-Jesus opposed them, seeking to turn the procouncil away from the faith." Okay, so Bar-Jesus again dabbled in the cult.

    28:51-28:55

We saw a guy like this, remember back in Acts 8, verse 9, Simon.

    28:56-28:57

    Same kind of thing.

    28:58-28:59

    Occultic, satanic.

    29:02-29:05

And Sergius Paulus, he was governor of Cyprus.

    29:05-29:07

    Obviously very interested.

    29:08-29:08

    Verse 9.

    29:10-29:25

But Saul, who was also called Paul, while we're dealing out nicknames here, Luke's like, I'm going to remind you Saul - I'm talking about a permanent name change - and he's all the rest of the way here in the book of Acts.

    29:25-29:30

But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at Him.

    29:32-29:35

On a scale of 1 to 10, how intense do you think that was?

    29:36-29:43

Like Paul is trying to preach, and here's this Jewish false prophet trying to stop the preaching from happening.

    29:44-29:45

The Bible says he looked intently at Him.

    29:46-29:47

Go ahead, model that for me.

    29:47-29:48

What do you think that looked like?

    29:49-29:50

What do you think that looked like?

    29:52-30:03

He's trying to preach, and he's like, "I've got to stop this guy from telling people about Jesus." And Paul's just like, "Let me see your most intense look." Okay, not bad.

    30:05-30:20

"Looked intently at him and said, 'You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord.

    30:21-30:23

And now behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you.

    30:24-30:27

And you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.

    30:27-30:30

And immediately, mist and darkness fell upon Him.

    30:32-30:36

And He went about seeking people to lead Him by the hand.

    30:38-30:42

We talked about this a lot in the last year that God sometimes did these things in this age.

    30:43-30:48

He would allow these miracles to happen because they confirmed this message.

    30:50-30:55

You have these people going out proclaiming the new covenant of forgiveness of sins in Jesus Christ.

    30:55-30:59

And to authenticate the message, God would do miracles through the apostles.

    31:01-31:05

I read passages like this, and I think to myself, sometimes I wish God still did stuff like that.

    31:06-31:09

You know, somebody opposes your ministry, like, you know what?

    31:10-31:11

    Next three days, you're blind.

    31:12-31:12

    Bam!

    31:14-31:18

The truth is, I couldn't do that.

    31:20-31:25

Because spiritual wars cannot be won in the flesh.

    31:26-31:31

And you see in this passage, Paul didn't claim anything or speak over anything.

    31:32-31:36

His boldness wasn't just about his personality.

    31:38-31:45

There's a part of me that would think, well, Paul seemed like kind of an intense guy, Maybe that was just sort of his personality coming out.

    31:45-31:47

But that's not true because look at verse 9.

    31:47-31:57

It says, "But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit." This was a Spirit-powered rebuke and action.

    31:59-32:02

Because there was a war going on for Sergius' soul.

    32:04-32:05

    Very clear in the text.

    32:05-32:06

He wanted to hear the Gospel.

    32:07-32:10

This false prophet tried to stop him and we're hearing it.

    32:12-32:15

Church, there are spiritual wars happening all around us.

    32:16-32:21

How many people here this morning can tell a story something like this?

    32:21-32:22

    Something like this.

    32:22-32:32

You know, there's a co-worker of mine that I've been wanting to share the Gospel with for months, and it seems like every time I go to share the Gospel with him, something happens.

    32:33-32:34

    He gets called away.

    32:34-32:36

There's some kind of an interruption.

    32:36-32:37

    The phone rings.

    32:37-32:39

Anybody have a story like that?

    32:40-32:41

    That's spiritual war.

    32:41-32:42

That's exactly what's going on in this passage.

    32:43-32:52

Here's a guy that's open to the Gospel, and here are people that want to give him the Gospel, and Satan puts one of his agents right in the middle to say I'm going to stop this from happening.

    32:53-32:54

It's happening where you work too.

    32:56-32:58

There's a spiritual war going on.

    33:01-33:09

Maybe you have a child that you've set this example about following Christ and doing the right thing, and this child has rebelled against that.

    33:09-33:11

They've decided to become their own god.

    33:12-33:19

And just when you think you're about to have a breakthrough with this child, you've taken two steps forward and you've taken five steps back.

    33:19-33:21

There's a spiritual war going on.

    33:22-33:33

How many times in your life do you think that there's an Elimus, there's a Bar-Jesus trying to stop something that the Lord is trying to do?

    33:34-33:37

I think that happens a lot more that many of us can realize.

    33:39-33:41

There are spiritual wars going on.

    33:42-33:45

The bad news is you can't win them.

    33:46-33:51

The worst news is you can't even fight them.

    33:52-33:57

The great news is the Holy Spirit fights our battles for us.

    33:59-34:00

    Enemies are going to come.

    34:01-34:09

This year as we go through Acts 13-20, We're going to see a lot of crazy stuff happen to the early church.

    34:10-34:30

We're going to see Satan trying to stop the church through things like riots and attempted murder and imprisonments and mob attacks, beatings, fallouts - all of these things happening to this young, early church, and almost 2,000 years later, here we are - bigger and stronger than ever.

    34:32-34:37

Because the Holy Spirit has fought our battles with us every step of the way.

    34:38-34:44

And just like the book of Acts, just like these chapters we're going to be looking at this year, your life is a story.

    34:45-34:53

And in your life, you have to deal with mobs and riots and tragedy and hurts and disappointments.

    34:54-34:56

There are times that you're going to feel crushed.

    34:59-35:08

But I want to encourage you that just like in this passage here, The Holy Spirit shows up and takes care of business with Bar Jesus, strikes him blind.

    35:10-35:20

Maybe the Holy Spirit won't show up and do that exact thing in your life, but I promise you, He's going to show up and He's going to do big things to win a victory for you.

    35:21-35:23

If you're willing to hold on.

    35:24-35:32

If you're willing to patiently endure, He will fight your battles for you because you can't.

    35:33-36:01

2 Corinthians 10 3 Paul says for though we walk in the flesh we are not waging war according to the flesh Satan and his demons aren't going to be affected at all no matter what caliber of gun you own no matter how many karate classes you took no matter how much you can bench press that doesn't impress them at all this is a spiritual war and only God's Holy Spirit has the power to win these battles.

    36:04-36:07

Paul did not have the power to strike people blind himself.

    36:08-36:11

Like how do you know that? Because he would have done it a lot more often.

    36:12-36:54

Trust me on that. Finally, why is the Holy Spirit the most important person in the church? Well, only he can empower ministry, only he he can fight our battles the last thing only he can save people only he can save people look at verse 12 it says then the Pro Council that's Sergius Paulus the governor then the Pro Council believed when he saw what had occurred look at this last phrase this this last phrase like the best part of the whole passage to me it says for he was astonished at the what does your Bible say say it loud Teaching of the Lord.

    36:55-36:59

He was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

    37:00-37:03

Alright, now look at life from Sergius' perspective for a minute.

    37:03-37:14

You hear this gospel message, there's preachers in town, I want to hear them, this guy tries to get in the way, and they're like, "You're not going to see for a while." This guy goes blind and these preachers show up.

    37:14-37:16

You've seen some crazy stuff already.

    37:17-37:18

    Stuff that would astonish you.

    37:20-37:24

But the Bible doesn't say he was astonished at the miracle.

    37:25-37:27

The Bible says he was astonished at what?

    37:29-37:29

    Teaching.

    37:30-37:31

He was astonished at the gospel.

    37:33-37:33

What do you mean by that?

    37:33-37:35

Well, I'm going to give you two stories.

    37:36-37:40

I'm going to tell you two stories real quick, and I want you to tell me which of these two stories is more astonishing.

    37:42-37:43

    Story one, are you ready?

    37:43-37:44

    Story one.

    37:45-37:47

    Man was struck blind temporarily.

    37:49-37:50

    Amazing?

    37:51-37:53

Yes, but let's stand it next to this one.

    37:53-37:54

    Story number two.

    37:56-38:02

God Almighty created the universe by speaking it into existence.

    38:02-38:09

And with all this incredible stuff He created, there was one thing He created that was superior to everything, and that was mankind.

    38:10-38:11

    Why is man superior?

    38:11-38:13

God put His image on man.

    38:14-38:27

And says, "I created you to have a love relationship so that you would enjoy me and be blessed by knowing me and experience my provision, and we're going to have this relationship." And what did man do?

    38:28-38:37

Man spit in God's face and turned his back by disobeying the one rule that God gave man.

    38:39-38:42

Because of that, every one of us are born encoded into our DNA.

    38:43-38:49

Every one of us are born with a sin nature, a rebellious nature, a self-centered nature.

    38:51-38:59

But this same God, still, despite all of that, He still loves you so much.

    39:01-39:03

Despite this death penalty that we earned.

    39:05-39:13

despite the justification that God would have to just fling us straight to hell the first time we sin.

    39:14-39:19

He loves us so much that he said, "I'm gonna fix their problem for them.

    39:20-39:21

"And here's how I'm gonna do it.

    39:22-39:24

"I'm gonna become a man and I'm gonna live among them.

    39:24-40:14

"And I'm gonna show them what I'm like, "but ultimately what I'm going to do "is I'm going to allow them to take me and nail me to a cross and publicly humiliate me, publicly execute me, and I will allow that death to take their place. I will allow that to pay their penalty for them. And I will raise from the dead and give the promise of the resurrection and restore in them the eternal life that they forfeited the first time that they has erased spit in my face. And this gift of salvation, this gift of forgiveness, this gift of eternal life, it's available for anyone, no matter who you are, no matter what you've done, the gender, color of skin, income, I don't care, it's available for anyone who is willing to receive this gift.

    40:16-40:22

Which story is more amazing? That one? Or some guy somewhere was blind for a couple days?

    40:23-40:24

    Which one was more amazing?

    40:27-40:29

    The one about Jesus, right?

    40:30-40:32

Not the one about our Jesus.

    40:33-40:42

And that's why Sergius Paulus, when he heard this message, he was astonished.

    40:43-40:47

To say the God of the universe loves me that much?

    40:49-40:51

    That's the amazing thing.

    40:52-40:57

no program or event or gimmick that we come up with.

    41:00-41:19

No matter how talented our musicians are, no matter how great our artists are, no matter how gifted our administrators are, no matter how polished our public speakers are, we don't have a thing that can save a soul.

    41:21-41:23

Only the Holy Spirit can do that.

    41:25-41:27

What's our part? What's the power that we bring?

    41:27-41:31

There's only one thing, church, that you and I can contribute.

    41:33-41:38

We spent all year last year talking about the Holy Spirit being the power of God so that we might be witnesses.

    41:39-41:40

Well, the Holy Spirit's God Himself.

    41:41-41:42

That's why He is the power of God.

    41:42-41:46

But you know there's only one thing in the Bible besides God Himself.

    41:46-42:41

There's only one thing in the Bible called the power of God you know what that is like creation right creation is the power of God the Bible doesn't say that like what about miracles miracles are the power of God the Bible doesn't say that aside from God himself there's only one thing that the Bible calls the power of God one thing it's in Romans 116 I am NOT ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God not it describes the power of God not it tells us about the power of God but your Bible literally says that the gospel is literally the power of God so when you are tempted to unload the power of God on someone you have that that ability, all you need to do is share the Gospel.

    42:43-42:43

    Because that is the power.

    42:46-42:53

So as we kick off this new year, we're going to be asking God's Holy Spirit to do what only He can.

    42:54-42:58

All year, this is what we want to see God's Holy Spirit do.

    42:58-43:00

We want to see Him empower ministry.

    43:03-43:05

It doesn't really matter how talented you are.

    43:05-43:09

What matters is if you allow to be at work in your life.

    43:09-43:10

    That's where the power is.

    43:12-43:17

This year, we're asking God's Holy Spirit to fight our spiritual battles for us.

    43:18-43:23

If you've been with us, some of you have been with us from the beginning, you know the battles that we've had.

    43:23-43:24

    We've had some bad ones.

    43:25-43:26

    We've had some rough ones.

    43:26-43:27

    We've had some heartbreaking ones.

    43:27-43:31

The Holy Spirit has taken us through some very hard times.

    43:32-43:33

And there's going to be some battles ahead.

    43:36-43:43

Over the years, I guess I get less and less scared of them because more and more I see God's Holy Spirit taking care of things.

    43:45-43:46

I learn to trust Him more and more.

    43:49-43:53

Lastly, trusting the Holy Spirit to save people.

    43:54-44:00

We want to see the Holy Spirit bring people in the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

    44:00-44:24

We want to see people baptized public response, a public profession of faith. We're going to close our time here together in here by receiving the Lord's Supper. If our worship team would come forward. As we gather around the Lord's table, if our ushers would come up as well please. We're going to celebrate God's grace.

    44:27-44:34

We're going to celebrate our unity in Jesus Christ. We're going to celebrate the victory that Christ has accomplished.

    44:36-44:43

We're going to celebrate the truth that we are not a people who someday hope for maybe, probably, a salvation that comes.

    44:43-44:49

We're not a people that hope someday maybe victory over evil is won.

    44:50-44:55

We are a people who are celebrating salvation and victory right now.

    44:56-45:12

There's no better way for us to kick off this New Year the gathering around the Lord's table, in remembrance, in thanksgiving, in celebration, Jesus Christ has won.

    45:14-45:17

    His church is unstoppable.

    45:18-45:20

I ask you to bow your heads.

    45:20-45:21

I'm going to lead us in a prayer.

    45:22-45:47

And then as the ushers pass out the elements, the worship team is going to play it over you for a few moments, and then when everybody has the elements, hold on to them and as a sort of a sign of unity let's take the Lord's Supper together celebrating the finished work of Jesus Christ the unstoppable victory that he gives us Church. Father in heaven we thank you for your faithfulness.

    45:48-46:29

Father just as it would be so foolish for a man to go fishing without a fishing pole it is so foolish for us to try to do church stuff without your Spirit. So Father, we thank you. We've already received the promise. We thank you, Father, that the Holy Spirit is already present here. I pray, Father, for our church that we would model this church in Antioch, that we would be diligently and deliberately trying to tune in to listen. We are actively trying to listen through worship, through ministering, through fasting, through prayer.

    46:30-46:43

That we would be a people who are so seeking Your face and in tune with what You're trying to teach us as far as what direction we're to go, how we're to carry out the ministry that You've called us to.

    46:45-46:47

Help us, Father, to tune in.

    46:49-46:54

As we gather around Your table today, Father, I pray that this is not something we take lightly.

    46:54-46:55

    Jesus commanded this.

    46:56-47:00

This is a time of incredible celebration and reflection.

    47:02-47:06

A time of proclaiming the Lord's death until He comes.

    47:09-47:14

We praise You, Father, for every perfect provision that You've already made for us.

    47:14-47:16

    Let us walk in these.

    47:16-47:19

Let us walk in the Spirit, we pray in Jesus' name.

    47:19-47:19

    Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 13:1-12

Make note, as you read, what specific things the Holy Spirit is doing for the church when He is specifically mentioned.

  1. What 3 things are we to do to "tune in" - to best hear the Holy Spirit and follow His guidance? List them and discuss how to do them and why God uses these things to help us be "tuned in" to the Spirit. (hint: Acts 13:2-3, one of these things is mentioned twice!)

  2. How does the Holy Spirit fight our spiritual wars? How do you know when you are in a spiritual war (Acts 13:6-11)?

  3. What astonished Sergius Paulus (Acts 13:12)? What is amazing to you about the Gospel?

Breakout Questions:

Please pray for our ministry year. Lots of big events planned, pray we see the Holy Spirit empowering us, fighting our battles, and saving souls!

Rightly Motivated.

Getting On Mission: Why should I care?

  1. I care because people are Hurting. (Matt 9:36)

  2. I care because of where people are Heading. (Matt 9:37)

  3. I care because God   Does. (Matt 9:37b-38)

  • 00:00-00:08

If this is your home church, or if you're visiting here, if you're involved in another church, a question you need to ask is what kind of a church is this?

    00:08-00:15

And I want to share with you just - this is going to be reviewed for a lot of you, but for some of you this might be new information.

    00:16-00:22

But we need to constantly go back and evaluate what kind of a church is Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh North.

    00:23-00:26

Harvest Bible Chapel sits on four pillars.

    00:26-00:31

Our first pillar is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    00:32-00:34

We believe that God wrote a book.

    00:34-00:38

And we are not shy about saying what God said.

    00:38-00:43

Our second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus in worship.

    00:43-00:47

That's why we spend so much time in passionate worship.

    00:47-00:53

It engages our emotions in being worshipers for God corporately in music.

    00:55-00:59

Our third pillar is believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    00:59-01:04

And I've spoken about this so much from this podium.

    01:05-01:11

All of the ways that we've seen the Lord answer prayer, even in this little congregation, has been astounding.

    01:11-01:19

Very specific prayers answered, people healed, and genuine modern day miracles that we have seen.

    01:20-01:22

We believe firmly in the power of prayer.

    01:23-01:28

And our fourth pillar is sharing the good news of Jesus of boldness.

    01:28-01:31

And we're going to be spending some time talking about that today.

    01:31-01:34

But how do we go after this mission?

    01:34-01:48

If this is the mission of the church - the four pillars - the mission is to make disciples, to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment - that's our mission statement - how do we go after that?

    01:50-01:54

Well, at Harvest Bible Chapel, we believe that the disciple of Jesus Christ does three things.

    01:55-01:57

A disciple of Jesus Christ Worships Christ.

    01:59-02:00

    Worships Christ.

    02:00-02:05

That's why we worship corporately, and we encourage you to worship privately.

    02:05-02:11

Be in prayer and in God's Word and worshiping in private and in your home.

    02:11-02:13

We believe a disciple worships Christ.

    02:13-02:16

We believe a disciple of Jesus Christ walks with Christ.

    02:17-02:19

    Again, that's your personal walk.

    02:20-02:26

It's also being involved in a small group, because one of the biggest ways that God's going to be at work in your life and the people.

    02:27-02:32

And we believe at Harvest Bible Chapel that a disciple works for Christ.

    02:32-02:33

    A disciple worships Christ.

    02:33-02:34

    A disciple walks with Christ.

    02:35-02:36

And a disciple works for Christ.

    02:37-02:41

Involved in sharing the weekly kingdom responsibility.

    02:42-02:49

We want to see everybody involved in ministry at the church because we believe according to God's Word that God's equipped every one of us to be involved in ministry.

    02:51-02:58

And as we've been talking about so much this past year, Our whole ministry year last year hung on just one verse really.

    02:58-03:27

Acts 1:8 When Jesus told the disciples, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." And this statement, this power that Jesus gave us by His Holy Spirit, I want you to notice that Jesus said I've seen my witnesses in Jerusalem, and Judea, and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

    03:29-03:32

To the disciples, Jerusalem was the neighborhood.

    03:32-03:34

    That was where they were.

    03:35-03:39

Judea and Samaria was the surrounding community.

    03:40-03:45

And the ends of the earth, obviously, international missions type stuff.

    03:46-04:01

At Harvest Bible Chapel, you could be asking, "Well, how does this church do evangelism?" "What does this church do for outreach and evangelism?" Well, looking at what Jesus prescribed for us, Jerusalem - that's your neighborhood.

    04:01-04:02

Those are the people you work with.

    04:02-04:04

    That's your family.

    04:04-04:07

We encourage you to invite people to come and worship with us here at church.

    04:07-04:08

    That's your Jerusalem.

    04:10-04:12

Judea and Samaria - the surrounding community.

    04:12-04:17

Every small group at Harvest Bible Chapel involved in some type of community outreach.

    04:18-04:24

You know, every quarter, getting out and doing something in a community to show the love and share the word of Christ.

    04:26-04:28

Ends of the Earth, mission trips.

    04:31-04:35

Our youth has gone to Kentucky just this past summer to do a mission trip.

    04:36-04:39

Remember a couple years ago, we'd gone to Moldova, to Romania, to Thailand.

    04:41-04:44

We've certainly been going after this ends of the Earth thing.

    04:45-04:48

That's how we do evangelism at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    04:48-04:49

    Four pillars.

    04:50-04:51

    One mission.

    04:52-04:53

    To make disciples.

    04:56-05:06

And at Harvest Bible Chapel, I have to tell you, we are so blessed to have the people involved in ministry here that we have.

    05:07-05:09

It's a joy for me as a pastor.

    05:10-05:12

And that's one of the reasons I love this video so much.

    05:12-05:14

I was in the cleanup crew.

    05:14-05:16

I wasn't trusted to be on the roof.

    05:16-05:19

But that day was such a blessing for me.

    05:20-05:29

As I was looking at people working and making food and cleaning up, I thought this is the kind of a church that I have the privilege of being a part of.

    05:30-05:40

A church that would see one of its members in need and say, "Ok, we're all going to rally around and love this family and meet this need.

    05:42-05:48

And some of you have probably heard me say it a dozen times, I just love the people in this church so much.

    05:49-06:00

And we want to take a few moments this morning to show our appreciation specifically for all of our volunteers who help in various capacities of ministry.

    06:00-06:04

And I ask Corrine if you would come up.

    06:05-06:15

And just as a church, we want to formally and publicly express our gratitude and appreciation for everybody that serves in this church.

    06:21-06:21

    Thank you, Corinne.

    06:22-06:27

You know, Romans 13, verse 7 says that we should give honor to whom honor is owed.

    06:28-06:32

And we had a banquet planned, and unfortunately, most people were unable to make it.

    06:33-07:09

probably too busy serving Christ to take the time to have a dinner to be acknowledged for that but we just love and appreciate our volunteers so much so the turning your Bibles with me please to the book of Matthew in chapter 9 we're taking a little break from Acts just a one-week break we're going to be jumping back to Matthew chapter 9 we're going to be starting in verse 35 because We're just finishing a ministry year, and next week we're about to start our next ministry calendar year.

    07:12-07:14

So it's sort of a time of excitement.

    07:14-07:19

We're sort of spending this week placing the ball on the tee ready for kickoff.

    07:20-07:27

And as a pastor, one of my jobs certainly is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry.

    07:27-07:30

And I believe part of that is to to motivate people for ministry.

    07:33-07:38

And you know, I could motivate you for ministry by trying the guilt technique.

    07:40-07:41

I could try the guilt technique.

    07:41-07:48

You know, I could beat you up and say, you lazy people, there's work to be done and a lot of you people are just sitting there.

    07:50-07:51

But I'm too nice to do that.

    07:53-07:55

Don't laugh, I am too nice to do that.

    07:56-07:57

I've heard some of you laugh.

    07:58-07:59

I am too nice to do that.

    08:00-08:02

I'm too nice to do that.

    08:02-08:06

I could guilt you by making you feel bad for someone else.

    08:07-08:11

Saying if you're not doing what God's called you to do, then the work's being piled on someone else.

    08:11-08:16

That's why when we're recognizing our volunteers, some people are standing up three, four, five, seven times.

    08:17-08:18

I don't think Sherry sat down the entire time.

    08:19-08:21

She's like, yeah, I'm on every team.

    08:23-08:24

I'm not going to guilt you.

    08:24-08:28

I'm not too nice to guilt you making you feel bad for someone else.

    08:31-08:34

I'm not even going to guilt you by making you feel bad about yourself.

    08:35-08:41

If you don't feel the need to get involved in any type of ministry at Harvest Bible Chapel, then maybe you don't know the Lord.

    08:43-08:47

Because the Bible is clear that every member of the body of Christ has a particular job to do.

    08:48-08:51

And if you're not doing something, maybe you don't have a gift.

    08:51-08:55

you don't have a gift, maybe you don't have the Spirit, and...

    08:57-08:59

No, that's not how I roll.

    08:59-09:01

That's not how the leadership of this church rolls.

    09:02-09:08

And quite honestly, even if we did decide to roll that way, it wouldn't be effective, would it?

    09:08-09:12

If I tried to guilt people into serving, how long do you think that would last?

    09:13-09:14

    A couple weeks? A month?

    09:16-09:19

We need to be rightly motivated for ministry.

    09:21-09:38

To get involved in small groups, to get involved in outreach, to get involved in whether it's fixing a roof or serving a meal at Ronald McDonald House or any of the other things that we have done or are planning to do, we need to be rightly motivated to get involved in ministry unto the Lord.

    09:39-09:42

Because it's so easy for us to lose our passion.

    09:42-09:44

It's so easy for us to get off mission.

    09:46-09:52

It's so easy for us to choose not to think about the condition and the destination of lost people.

    09:54-09:56

And I want to ask you this morning, do you care?

    09:58-09:59

    Do you care?

    10:02-10:06

In other words, Harvest Bible Chapel, do you want to play church?

    10:07-10:09

Or do you want to be the church?

    10:09-10:11

    We've gone through Acts 1-12.

    10:12-10:19

We've seen through the foundation of the apostles what the church was supposed to be what the church was supposed to be doing.

    10:19-10:20

Do you want to be the church?

    10:22-10:26

Or do we want to rent this room every Sunday and play church?

    10:28-10:32

Jesus' last command is our first priority.

    10:33-10:38

And we must have the heart and mind of Christ in going after His mission.

    10:38-10:42

I want us to look at Matthew 9:35-38.

    10:43-10:47

Then we're going to go back and pick up a few things from this passage.

    10:47-10:48

Let's read it all first of all.

    10:50-11:02

Verse 35, "And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.

    11:04-11:23

When He saw the crowds, He had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd." He said to His disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

    11:25-11:37

Therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." I want you to note first of all, verse 35, this is important.

    11:37-11:43

Jesus was giving the message and meeting needs.

    11:43-11:44

    Did you see that?

    11:45-11:52

It says he was teaching in the synagogues and proclaiming the gospel, so he was sharing the gospel.

    11:53-11:57

But it says that he was healing every disease and every affliction.

    11:57-12:03

So I want you to see that Jesus was giving the message and meeting needs.

    12:03-12:05

Did you see that in the text? Did you see that?

    12:08-12:09

What's the big deal about that?

    12:09-12:53

The big deal about that is too many churches - I've said this a thousand times - the extremes right there are some churches are like you know it's just about the message you just preach the gospel and get them the gospel and that's all that matters but they have no mind or care to do anything to meet people's needs they don't care just get them in the church will preach at them and get them in here next week will preach at them again but what about their hurt that's going on between Sundays well just get them in here we'll preach a gospel to them they have no mind for that but I guess even more recent the pendulum sort of swung to to the other side, where you have churches that are going light on the Word of God, light on the Gospel, and we're just going to love people and we're just going to feed people.

    12:54-12:57

And it's not important if we share the Gospel with them.

    12:57-12:58

We're just going to love them.

    12:59-13:02

And if we love them, eventually, they'll come to know God.

    13:02-13:05

They're not going to come to know God apart from the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    13:08-13:12

But you see, Jesus didn't have some lopsided approach.

    13:12-13:13

    He did both.

    13:13-13:19

He loved and ministered to people while He was sharing the gospel with them.

    13:21-13:29

So in our church, we proclaim the gospel, we get into God's Word in our small groups, we do outreach, we do mission work.

    13:30-13:38

With these things, whether it's the message or the meeting needs, those can be kind of plug-and-play.

    13:39-13:46

Meaning, it's easy to get anybody plugged in and doing this stuff.

    13:48-14:02

What I want to focus on today, when it comes to being motivated for ministry, motivated to get involved in a church, motivated to make disciples, the most important thing about that can't be learned.

    14:03-14:05

It can't be plug and play.

    14:08-14:12

The most important thing is having passion for lost people.

    14:14-14:17

We see in this passage, this is the thing that motivated Jesus.

    14:18-14:20

And this is the thing that must drive us.

    14:22-14:23

    Compassion.

    14:24-14:25

    Do you care?

    14:26-14:27

    Do you care?

    14:28-14:32

There might be somebody here this morning saying, "Why should I care?" That's a great question.

    14:32-14:33

I'm going to give you three reasons why you should care.

    14:34-14:35

    It's on your outline.

    14:36-14:37

    Why should I care?

    14:38-14:41

Number one from our text, I care because people are hurting.

    14:42-14:44

    Look at verse 36 again.

    14:46-15:00

"When he saw the crowds..." Now, remember, we walked through the book of Mark for two years, and Jesus was constantly having crowds come after Him and wanting healing and wanting His teaching, and they were constantly, constantly coming.

    15:01-15:06

In Matthew 9, "When he saw the crowds, Jesus rolled His eyes.

    15:06-15:07

    Here we go again.

    15:07-15:09

They just never give me any time off.

    15:09-15:11

Is that what your Bible says?

    15:11-15:12

    What does it say?

    15:13-15:16

When He saw the crowds, He had what?

    15:17-15:17

    What's your Bible say?

    15:19-15:20

Say it. Say it loud. Come on.

    15:20-15:21

    What did He have?

    15:22-15:22

    Compassion.

    15:24-15:25

    He had compassion.

    15:25-15:36

That word literally means "suffer with." It means somebody's hurting, Because you see somebody hurting, you're hurting too.

    15:37-15:38

    That's what compassion means.

    15:38-15:42

Jesus saw these crowds coming and He was hurting with them.

    15:44-15:45

    How are they described?

    15:45-15:46

    Look at the next phrase.

    15:46-15:55

It says, "because they were harassed and helpless." The Greek literally means they were exhausted.

    15:57-15:59

    They were tossed aside.

    16:01-16:02

    like garbage.

    16:04-16:06

    That's how the people felt.

    16:07-16:09

That was the condition they were in.

    16:10-16:14

Most importantly, that was the condition in which God saw them.

    16:16-16:17

He didn't see them as annoyances.

    16:18-16:22

He didn't see them as ministry opportunity or money-making opportunity, rather.

    16:22-16:25

He saw them as these are people that are hurting.

    16:27-16:28

    They're harassed and they're helpless.

    16:30-16:34

Again, exhausted, people worn out with life.

    16:35-16:37

Do you think people like that live around here?

    16:38-16:40

People that are just completely worn out with life?

    16:40-16:41

    I've had enough.

    16:43-16:46

I can't do this one more day. I can't do it.

    16:47-16:48

Do you know people like that?

    16:50-16:51

    I promise you, you do.

    16:53-16:54

    What's the other word?

    16:55-16:57

    Helpless, again, tossed aside.

    16:58-16:59

    People that feel insignificant.

    17:00-17:01

    People that feel worthless.

    17:01-17:04

People that feel like they don't really have much meaning in life.

    17:05-17:07

    I just feel abandoned.

    17:08-17:10

Like everybody else has their thing going on.

    17:10-17:12

I can't get my thing going on.

    17:12-17:16

And I feel like nobody would even care if I wasn't here.

    17:18-17:19

    You know people like that?

    17:19-17:21

I promise you those people live in your neighborhood.

    17:21-17:24

I promise you those people are working next to you.

    17:28-17:39

What I want to encourage you, church, as we talk about being motivated to do ministry, motivated for evangelism, motivated for discipleship, we need to see people the way Jesus saw people.

    17:40-17:47

How many times do we make excuses - and I've been guilty of this - we make excuses not to help someone.

    17:48-17:49

    Oh, that person's hopeless.

    17:50-17:52

That person is just an addict.

    17:52-18:02

That person will just - if I help them, they'll probably misspend the money and spend it foolishly.

    18:03-18:05

    We make excuses.

    18:07-18:10

We need to remind ourselves that people are not the enemy.

    18:11-18:12

People are the victim of the enemy.

    18:15-18:21

And according to the Bible, people apart from Jesus Christ are dead.

    18:23-18:23

    Okay?

    18:23-18:25

    They're not bad people.

    18:26-18:28

    spiritually dead people.

    18:30-18:32

And even if they're just hurting themselves.

    18:33-18:37

That's one of the reasons I hear people give for not wanting to help.

    18:38-18:50

"Well, that guy's a drug addict, and he made his own bed, he's just going to have to lie in it." And somehow we justify not having pity on somebody because they brought the hurt upon themselves.

    18:51-18:59

Like yeah, we feel bad for somebody that's been abused, as we should, We have no pity for the person that's hurting themselves.

    19:01-19:05

Sometimes I think that should make us pity them even more, not less.

    19:06-19:08

    This person is destroying themselves.

    19:08-19:09

    They don't even realize it.

    19:10-19:11

    They can't stop doing it.

    19:14-19:15

You know, we think we know people.

    19:15-19:19

We think we understand what's going on in people's heads and in people's hearts.

    19:20-19:23

But the Bible says that Jesus knew what was in a man.

    19:24-19:26

Jesus knew what made people tick.

    19:26-19:29

Jesus knew the thoughts of every person that He encountered.

    19:30-19:33

Do you think Jesus knew what was on the hearts and minds of these crowds as they were coming?

    19:33-19:34

    Do you think Jesus knew?

    19:35-19:37

Do you think Jesus realized what was going on in their hearts?

    19:38-19:39

    Of course He did.

    19:39-19:42

But He was still moved with compassion.

    19:43-19:51

From Jesus' divine perspective, He saw that these were sinful, selfish, miserable people.

    19:53-19:59

Instead of saying, "Well, no one bothered with them." He was moved with compassion.

    20:00-20:03

And compassion isn't just feeling bad.

    20:04-20:05

Some people want it to stop there.

    20:06-20:16

They think compassion is - I watched the Sarah McLachlan song, the commercial where they're beating the puppies or whatever, and they play this song.

    20:16-20:17

You know what I'm talking about?

    20:18-20:23

And we're like, "Oh, I feel so bad for the puppies." That's not compassion.

    20:25-20:28

Maybe you do feel bad, and you should feel bad about that, but that's not compassion.

    20:29-20:34

Compassion is when those emotions drive you to do something about it.

    20:34-20:36

    That's real compassion.

    20:36-20:39

It's being moved to do something.

    20:41-21:04

Sadly, I see people - they're more moved by seeing the sports team lose, or seeing who gets voted off of their favorite singing show, or what character gets killed off on your favorite TV program, we're more moved and emotionally affected by those things than we are over someone who's destroying themselves.

    21:06-21:10

We have more sadness over those things than sadness that somebody is lost and hurting.

    21:13-21:14

I care because people are hurting.

    21:15-21:17

People are hurting. Do you care about that?

    21:18-21:31

of his Bible chapel, recognizing the people that are hurting and going after them with compassion, we call that "red apple evangelism." What do you mean "red apple evangelism?" It means that they're ripe.

    21:32-21:33

They are ripe for the Gospel.

    21:34-21:37

The circumstances of life prepare people for the Gospel.

    21:38-21:55

You know, the guy that thinks he has everything going on - he's got money in the bank, everything's good - Like the person whose whole world comes crashing around them, realizing that their thing isn't working.

    21:56-22:00

That's why we need to be on the lookout for the people around us who are hurting.

    22:01-22:05

The people around us who are harassed and helpless.

    22:07-22:13

Those are our best opportunities to share the living hope of Jesus Christ.

    22:16-22:17

    Can you do that?

    22:19-22:26

Sometimes when it comes to evangelism - Pastor Jeff, I'm with you right here.

    22:26-22:34

I see people are hurting, and I know I should say something, but do you know when it comes to evangelism, what it's like for people?

    22:35-22:44

Did you ever get a really weird gift and you're just not quite sure how to respond to it a thank you letter for the gift.

    22:47-22:50

Aaron and I got a gift right after we got married.

    22:51-22:55

A dear sweet lady got us this gift, and to this day, I don't understand it.

    22:56-23:03

It was a basket, and in the basket was a beanie baby and a smock that you would wear if you worked at Dairy Queen.

    23:04-23:05

Like a little flowered apron thing.

    23:06-23:07

And it was very nice of her.

    23:07-23:12

I mean, the woman, she put it in the basket and she had it all wrapped up, It was really nice.

    23:12-23:15

And I sound like a jerk, I know.

    23:17-23:18

I'm just saying I didn't understand the gift.

    23:19-23:22

Somebody looked at me and thought, you know what Pastor Jeff could use?

    23:23-23:24

    As a smock.

    23:27-23:28

I just didn't understand the gift.

    23:29-23:30

    I appreciated it.

    23:30-23:32

What I'm saying is it made the thank you note a little awkward.

    23:32-23:33

Like what do you say about that?

    23:33-23:36

Like, thanks, my old smock was wearing out.

    23:37-23:43

You know, I've been telling Aaron when we have enough money, by a beanie baby, I just didn't know what to say.

    23:44-23:47

I mean, I wanted to say something, but I wasn't quite sure what to say.

    23:48-23:50

I think sometimes church, that's how we are with evangelism.

    23:50-23:52

    Like, I should say something.

    23:53-23:54

But I'm not sure what to say.

    23:54-23:57

That person's working beside you and you see she's hurting.

    23:57-24:00

You see that she's gone through some stuff in her life.

    24:00-24:01

Do you know what I'm talking about?

    24:01-24:03

I just want to say something to her.

    24:04-24:05

But I'm not quite sure what to say.

    24:08-24:12

What is your sharing your testimony?

    24:13-24:26

As much as I tell you don't make it about you, sometimes it helps a person if you do make it about you in this sense to say, you know what, what I've found in my life is the hope that I have in Jesus Christ has really been an anchor for my soul.

    24:26-24:38

I've gone through some hard things myself, and what I've found is I don't have the strength to get through it, but my relationship with God through Jesus Christ has really...

    24:38-24:41

has really been the thing that's held it together for me over the years.

    24:41-24:43

Maybe you just share a brief testimony like that.

    24:44-24:48

Maybe just a short but clear gospel presentation.

    24:50-24:51

To say, you know, I understand you're hurting.

    24:53-24:55

Let me tell you the good news.

    24:55-24:56

We live in a world full of bad news.

    24:56-24:57

I want to tell you some good news.

    24:57-25:01

The good news is the Bible tells us God loves you.

    25:02-25:12

God loves you so much that He came to this earth as a man I've died on the cross to pay the penalty for all the wrong things that I've done and all the wrong things that you've done.

    25:13-25:19

And by receiving this gift that God's given us through His Son, we can have eternal life.

    25:20-25:21

We can have the promise of heaven.

    25:21-25:25

We can have peace in the hardest times.

    25:25-25:28

Maybe you just share a clear gospel presentation.

    25:30-25:32

Or the easiest thing is maybe you just invite Him to church.

    25:32-25:34

Say, "You know what, I understand that you're hurting.

    25:35-25:37

I would love for you to come to Harvest Bible Chapel.

    25:38-25:39

We have a great group of people in our church.

    25:39-25:41

We have some fantastic small groups.

    25:41-25:48

And I know there's just some people in our church that would love you, and want to help walk with you through this difficult season of your life.

    25:51-25:56

But when you care enough, you're going to say something and you're going to do something.

    25:58-26:00

We see again in our text, that's what moved Jesus.

    26:00-26:04

"I care because people are hurting." I care because people are hurting.

    26:05-26:22

getting on mission why should I care? I care because of where people are heading. Look at verse 37 again. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful." Stop there for a second. Harvest terminology.

    26:24-27:11

This might come as a shock to some of you, but when the Bible talks about harvest, and it's in our church name, when the Bible talks about harvest it has to God's judgment. Did you know that? Isaiah chapter 17, Joel chapter 3, Matthew chapter 13, Revelation chapter 14. I can give you some others. But when the Bible talks about harvest, it's always in the context and connection with God coming back in judgment. So what does Jesus mean here? Well, a plentiful harvest means that our evangelism must have urgency. That's what Jesus is talking about. He's lost and harassed and helpless people, not only are they miserable in this life, but they're heading to judgment.

    27:14-27:16

I care because of where people are heading.

    27:17-27:19

That should be a motivator for us for evangelism.

    27:21-27:29

Imagine it's 3 in the morning and you're sleeping and you open your eyes and you see that the neighbor's house is on fire.

    27:30-27:43

And from your vantage point, You can actually see that your neighbor is laying on their couch sleeping while their house is burning around them.

    27:43-27:44

    What would you do?

    27:44-27:46

What would you do in that situation?

    27:48-27:50

Would you roll over and say, well, you know what?

    27:50-27:58

My neighbor's probably not interested in me forcing my beliefs on them about fire and about the dangers of a burning house.

    27:58-28:00

I mean, I don't want to be pushy.

    28:01-28:07

They might look at me as some kind of like fire marshal type nut.

    28:07-28:14

I just don't want them to think less of me if I go and tell them that I don't think it's right that they're living in a burning house.

    28:15-28:16

    Is that what you'd do?

    28:18-28:20

Or would you do whatever it took to get them out of there?

    28:22-28:26

While you're dialing 911, you're screaming, you're banging on the door.

    28:26-28:32

Some of you would kick a hole through the wall and drag them out by their hair if it meant saving their life.

    28:34-28:36

    Why? Because it's urgent.

    28:37-28:41

You're like, I can't call them tomorrow at 9 AM and tell them what I think about fire.

    28:41-28:43

    They're having a problem now.

    28:43-28:45

And you see, that's how Jesus saw the multitudes.

    28:45-28:51

These are people that are heading to an eternal destination.

    28:54-28:55

    Hell is real.

    28:55-28:59

And real people are really going there I'm talking to God's Word. Do you care?

    29:01-29:36

General William Booth, the founder of the Salvation Army, once said that when he has a candidate that's training for officership, he said, "You know what I would like the most important part of their training to be when somebody wants to be an officer in the Salvation Army?" He said, "I'd like to send them to hell for 24 hours." What kind of a motivation do you think somebody would have of 24 hours in hell, knowing that there are some people that are going to be spending eternity there apart from Jesus Christ.

    29:37-29:42

That's what this harvest terminology - I care because of where people are heading.

    29:44-29:50

And finally today, we could have just started here and had a much shorter sermon.

    29:52-29:53

    I care because God does.

    29:54-29:55

    That's why I care.

    29:55-29:56

    because God does.

    29:58-30:00

Look at verse 37 again, second part.

    30:01-30:10

Jesus said, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." This is the other big problem.

    30:12-30:19

Not just that the need is so great, but Jesus said there are not enough people to meet the need.

    30:21-30:22

    Why are the laborers few?

    30:23-30:23

    Why is that?

    30:25-30:28

Who are all these people sitting in churches?

    30:29-30:35

Who are all these people that have received God's grace that have supposedly been transformed by God's Holy Spirit?

    30:37-30:38

Who have been given power to be witnesses?

    30:38-30:43

Who are all these people that received God's grace and are silent about it?

    30:44-30:46

The truth is I don't care about these churches.

    30:47-30:48

    I care about this church.

    30:49-30:51

What kind of a church are we?

    30:53-30:56

Are we a church that cares that God cares about?

    30:57-31:00

Are we a church that cares about the thing that moved Jesus?

    31:03-31:04

    God cares.

    31:06-31:19

And He chooses - listen to this - God chooses to show the world that He cares by using you.

    31:22-31:24

"For God so loved the world of His only begotten Son.

    31:26-31:30

God's love for the lost prompted Him to send His Son.

    31:31-31:39

And in the days in which we live, in the church age, in the new covenant days, how does God show a lost and dying world that He loves them?

    31:41-31:42

    You will receive power.

    31:43-31:44

    You will be My witnesses.

    31:45-31:47

We are the representatives of God.

    31:48-31:52

We are the people that should be going into our communities saying, You need to know that God loves you.

    31:55-31:56

We do that by showing love ourselves.

    31:57-31:59

    Empowered by God's Holy Spirit.

    32:01-32:03

    Like, man, you sold me.

    32:03-32:04

    So what should we do?

    32:04-32:05

We shouldn't even be sitting here.

    32:06-32:13

Let's just go out the door and start banging on people's houses and doing whatever it takes.

    32:14-32:20

We'll do one of those protest traffic blocks on 19 and just go car to car and tell people.

    32:22-32:29

There's actually a step one that Jesus commands us specifically.

    32:30-32:31

    Look at verse 38.

    32:32-32:35

"The harvest is plentiful, and labor is reviewed, therefore..." what?

    32:35-32:48

Jesus said, "Therefore pray earnestly." The command specifically, Jesus said, because of this need, because of the compassion that I have I've lost people.

    32:49-32:53

Because of the passion that I have for the mission, Jesus said the first thing you need to do is pray.

    32:54-32:54

    Pray how?

    32:55-32:56

    He says pray earnestly.

    32:57-32:58

    Pray earnestly.

    33:01-33:02

    Pray earnestly for what?

    33:04-33:09

The Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

    33:10-33:16

Your prayers let you participate God's eternal plan.

    33:18-33:19

This has to be step one.

    33:21-33:25

If you don't make prayer the priority, you're going to lose steam real fast.

    33:26-33:35

If you're going to base your zeal for mission on just one sermon, or one Billy Graham book or pamphlet that you wrote, you're going to lose steam fast.

    33:36-33:39

Jesus said the first thing you need to do is pray.

    33:40-33:46

Get on your face and cry out "Lord, do you care?

    33:49-33:52

Do you care?" Well, I do.

    33:54-33:57

And I know that you do too.

    33:59-34:04

It's good for us to get back to God's Word today and say, "Why do we care?" Why do we care?

    34:06-34:07

We care because people are hurting.

    34:09-34:12

People are wandering around out there, Jesus said, like sheep without a shepherd.

    34:13-34:16

We call a sheep without a shepherd dead, right?

    34:16-34:18

How long does a sheep make it without a shepherd?

    34:18-34:19

    Not long.

    34:21-34:23

People are lost and people are hurting.

    34:24-34:25

I care because people are hurting.

    34:26-34:27

I care because of where people are heading.

    34:28-34:34

Jesus said there's a harvest, and the Bible over and over and over talks about this harvest coming at the end times.

    34:36-34:38

We're just passing through this life.

    34:38-34:39

    We're heading for eternity.

    34:40-34:46

And our goal is to take as many people with us And I care because God cares.

    34:47-34:49

This is the thing that fired Jesus up.

    34:49-34:50

This is the thing that should fire me up.

    34:51-34:52

And I know it's the thing that fires you up.

    34:54-34:57

A lot of times I'm saying, "Okay, this is what the Word of God says.

    34:57-35:04

So my encouragement to you this week is to apply this." But actually we're going to do something a little different today.

    35:06-35:07

Why don't we apply this right now?

    35:08-35:08

    All in favor?

    35:10-35:11

Applying the Word of God right now?

    35:12-35:13

Let's do it. I want you to stand up.

    35:14-35:15

    Go ahead, stand up.

    35:16-35:19

And I want you to get in groups of like four people.

    35:21-35:22

Just get in groups of like four people.

    35:23-35:24

    Find some people near you.

    35:26-35:27

I want you to get in little groups.

    35:29-35:33

And we're going to do exactly what Jesus told us to do.

    35:35-35:36

    We're going to pray.

    35:37-35:39

Today I want you to pray about two things.

    35:42-35:44

of your groups, I want you to pray about two things.

    35:46-35:47

We're going to spend a few minutes.

    35:49-35:52

I want you to pray for our workers here.

    35:53-35:54

I want you to pray for our workers.

    35:55-36:00

Our elders, our ministry team leaders, our ministry teams, our small groups, our youth group.

    36:00-36:03

I want you to pray for the workers that are involved in ministry here.

    36:05-36:12

Specifically, I want you to pray for God to raise up more workers.

    36:12-36:19

I want you to pray for God to send more workers, more laborers for His harvest. Will you do that?

    36:19-36:20

    Get in your groups.

    36:22-36:23

Let's just spend a few minutes.

    36:24-36:30

And after this time comes to a close, I'll lead us in a closing prayer over our whole congregation.

    36:31-36:33

And then we'll have our closing worship song.

    36:33-36:34

    Let's pray.

When Wicked People Are Ruling the Nation:

  1. Wicked Leaders bring hard Times. (Acts 12:1-4)

  2. Hard Times bring hard Prayer. (Acts 12:5)

  3. Hard Prayer sees God Move. (Acts 12:6-19)

  4. God Moves and His Kingdom Advances. (Acts 12:20-25)

Psalm 2:1-4 - Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”
He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.

Psalm 37:12-13 - The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him,
but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he sees that his day is coming.

Psalm 59:7-8 - There they are, bellowing with their mouths with swords in their lips—
for “Who,” they think, “will hear us?”
But you, O Lord, laugh at them; you hold all the nations in derision.

  • 00:00-00:03

Turn in your Bibles with me, please.

    00:03-00:05

We're going to be in Acts 12.

    00:09-00:19

And this is actually the last sermon in our first stretch through the book of Acts this past year.

    00:20-00:30

And we're going to be getting into the next phase of the book of Acts, and we have a lot of incredible things by God's power, by His grace.

    00:30-00:34

We're very excited for what's ahead for the next ministry year.

    00:34-00:43

So, if you haven't been with us for all of last year, what did we talk about this past year?

    00:43-00:50

And really, everything that we've seen in Acts 1-12, it's all summed up in one verse.

    00:50-00:56

And that's why we have these banners up here as an image to get this in our head.

    00:56-00:58

That's what the book of Acts is about.

    00:58-00:59

    It's about one verse.

    01:00-01:16

Acts 1.8, Jesus told the disciples, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses throughout Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the earth." And that's what we see in the book of Acts.

    01:17-01:22

Jesus promised power to His people so that we would be witnesses.

    01:24-01:33

The Holy Spirit came to indwell believers, and we saw in Acts 2, they began witnessing and the church grew as many people came to Christ.

    01:35-01:39

Well, the religious leaders were constantly trying to stop all of the Jesus talk.

    01:40-01:48

And that culminated in the execution of Stephen, a young, handsome evangelist serving in the church.

    01:49-02:02

And Stephen's execution caused the church to scatter, but it didn't stop to religious leaders from pursuing, especially a man named Saul, who met Jesus while on the way to arrest some more Christians.

    02:04-02:13

Then God opened the door for Peter to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles, changing the course of church history.

    02:14-02:17

And in your Bibles today, we're going to be in Acts 12.

    02:20-02:24

And my wife will tell you I have a tendency to be a people pleaser.

    02:25-02:27

So I'm going to give you an option today.

    02:28-02:30

Do you want the short version?

    02:31-02:33

Or do you want the longer version?

    02:33-02:34

    Which one do you want?

    02:36-02:38

How many people want the short version?

    02:40-02:42

A few of you do. I appreciate your honesty.

    02:44-02:47

How many of you Bible scholars want the longer version?

    02:49-02:49

    Okay.

    02:51-02:52

Just the short version. Are you ready?

    02:53-02:54

    Write this down.

    02:56-02:57

    Do not mess with God.

    02:59-02:59

    Not ever.

    03:01-03:03

It will end very badly for you.

    03:05-03:07

Short version - people are dismissed if you like.

    03:08-03:08

    That's it.

    03:11-03:11

    You are loved.

    03:14-03:14

    That's the message.

    03:16-03:17

    You don't mess with God.

    03:20-03:25

For those of you who want the longer version, I'm going to unpack that statement a little bit for you.

    03:27-03:37

Acts 12 is all about Herod, who was the king at the time, and how he waged war against God.

    03:38-03:42

Alright, now, I'm going to need you to use your imaginations.

    03:42-03:43

    Okay? Are you ready?

    03:43-03:45

We're going to use our imaginations.

    03:45-03:46

This is going to be difficult.

    03:48-03:57

This is going to be very difficult, I want you to do this, because it will help you as we work through this passage.

    03:57-04:10

But I want you to imagine - imagine this scenario where there are these politicians, these career politicians, and they are extremely wicked.

    04:12-04:14

    Is your imagination going?

    04:14-04:17

Can you imagine what a wicked politician might be like, hypothetically?

    04:18-04:18

    Can you imagine?

    04:21-04:22

    Selfish?

    04:25-04:28

Imagine if you were a politician who's murderous.

    04:30-04:34

Imagine a politician that's part of a family of politicians.

    04:36-04:44

A politician who would pander to worldly people by trying to squash the Jesus people.

    04:44-04:47

Can you imagine such a politician existing?

    04:48-04:49

    Can you imagine that?

    04:49-05:01

I know it's hard to imagine that somebody would be given the responsibility and authority to rule over a people and they would be wicked, selfish, and murderous.

    05:03-05:05

That's exactly what we get with Herod.

    05:06-05:16

And that's what we're going to see in this passage, that again, if you could use your imagination, we might be able to apply some of these things to our culture today.

    05:17-05:17

    Maybe.

    05:19-05:25

Because today we're going to see what happens when wicked people rule wickedly.

    05:27-05:33

With the election coming up - we said October 2nd is like two weeks away.

    05:35-05:36

So we're like six weeks out?

    05:37-05:37

    Something like that?

    05:39-05:46

Is there a more timely message for us when wicked people are ruling the nation?

    05:47-05:54

I need to remind you, as we go through a passage like this, this is not going to be a political rant.

    05:55-06:01

And Harvest Bible Chapel and its officers do not endorse any particular candidate.

    06:01-06:02

    Okay? It's not about that.

    06:02-06:05

We're going to look and see what the Word of God says.

    06:05-06:06

And the Word of God is very clear.

    06:08-06:12

Here's some things that happen when wicked people are ruling the nation.

    06:12-06:13

    So jot this down.

    06:13-06:16

First of all, number one, Wicked leaders bring hard times.

    06:18-06:20

    Wicked leaders bring hard times.

    06:20-06:22

Any one of you could get up and preach this message.

    06:24-06:26

But it's my turn today, so look at verse 1.

    06:27-06:43

It says, "About that time, Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church." I'm going to stop here because you could be reading your Bible and we see Herod in the Gospels early.

    06:44-06:45

We see Herod in the Gospels late.

    06:46-06:47

    We see Herod here.

    06:47-06:48

We see Herod at the end of Acts.

    06:48-06:57

And you might be like, "How old was this guy?" "Herod lived to be like 200 years old." You understand that there are many Herods in the Bible.

    06:58-06:59

    Okay?

    06:59-07:03

The Herod here is known as Herod Agrippa I.

    07:05-07:08

And he reigned from 37 to 44 A.D.

    07:08-07:10

Now I'm going to give you some perspective here.

    07:11-07:17

This Herod that we're talking about here in Acts chapter 12, his grandfather was Herod the Great.

    07:18-07:35

You're like, "Well, which one was that?" You remember when Jesus was born and the Magi came from the east and they said, "We want to find the one born king of the Jews." And Herod was like, "There's not going to be any other king." And he ordered the execution of every Jewish baby boy two years and under.

    07:35-07:36

    Do you remember that Herod?

    07:36-07:37

    That's Herod the Great.

    07:38-07:38

    Herod's grandfather.

    07:40-07:40

    Okay?

    07:41-07:48

And this Herod in Acts 12 is also the nephew of Herod and Tippus.

    07:49-07:50

    Which Herod is that?

    07:50-07:52

    That's Luke 23:7.

    07:52-07:57

You remember when Jesus was on trial and the Bible says they took Him before Herod.

    07:57-08:00

And Herod really was interested in Jesus and wanted to talk to Jesus.

    08:01-08:03

And Jesus didn't even dignify him with an answer.

    08:03-08:05

Jesus just stood before him silent.

    08:07-08:08

    That was this Herod's uncle.

    08:09-08:13

And we're going to see another Herod later on in the book of Acts.

    08:13-08:14

It's going to be this Herod's son.

    08:15-08:18

    So here it's Herod Agrippa.

    08:20-08:24

This Herod, like a lot of them, had a shaky relationship with Rome.

    08:25-08:26

I'm not going to get into all the details.

    08:26-08:28

If you want to talk about that later, we can.

    08:28-08:30

But he had some political problems.

    08:32-08:38

And he actually gained popularity with the Jews by attacking the Christians.

    08:39-08:41

    That's how he got popular.

    08:41-08:50

He was ruling over Jewish people and this Christian movement was happening, and he found a way to be popular with the Jews.

    08:51-09:03

It says here, "Lay violent hands on some who belong to the church." Verse 2 says, "He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword." The Apostle John's brother, James.

    09:04-09:06

    Herod executed him.

    09:09-09:23

And James is actually the first apostle, the first apostle who was martyred, and he's actually the only one mentioned specifically in the Bible about being martyred.

    09:25-09:32

Verse 3, "And when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also.

    09:33-09:35

This was during the days of unleavened bread.

    09:36-09:39

So Herod kills James, and the Jews are happy.

    09:39-09:43

"Yeah, good for you, man!" And he sees that made him popular.

    09:43-09:49

So he's like, "And for my next trick..." He went after Peter.

    09:51-09:52

    That's kind of dumb.

    09:52-09:54

This is actually the third time Peter was arrested.

    09:54-09:58

It was getting to the point that Peter had his own cell with his name on it.

    09:59-10:03

He was arrested in Acts 4:3, Acts 5, verse 18.

    10:04-10:05

    But this was Herod's plan.

    10:05-10:07

The Bible makes it very clear.

    10:07-10:15

He wanted to execute Peter specifically after the Passover.

    10:16-10:16

    Why?

    10:17-10:21

Because all these Jews would have come to Jerusalem for the Passover.

    10:21-10:29

And Herod's mindset was after the holidays, before people leave, I'll execute Peter because all these people are going to be in town.

    10:30-10:34

and maximum impact with this execution.

    10:37-11:01

Verse 4, "And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people." The Herod says, "Okay, he's not getting away this time." The first two times he was arrested, somehow he got away.

    11:02-11:04

This time, he's not getting away.

    11:05-11:07

Round the clock guards, after the holiday, were going to kill him.

    11:08-11:17

Before we move on, I'd just like to remind you that wicked worldly people act wicked and worldly.

    11:19-11:33

And you're like, "Okay, so that's why we're supporting your family, so you can stay home and come up with these profound things?" I think that's more profound than we realize, because sometimes we're so surprised when wicked and worldly people do wicked and worldly things.

    11:36-11:43

You mean those people in Washington aren't promoting Christian values?

    11:44-11:44

    No.

    11:47-11:48

    Well, why is that?

    11:50-11:53

Wicked and worldly people act wicked and worldly.

    11:54-12:02

And the more our country wants to approve and celebrate sin, the more politicians are going to endorse it to stay popular.

    12:02-12:04

You see, the same thing's going to keep happening.

    12:05-12:09

In Herod's day, he's like, persecuting the Christians makes people happy.

    12:09-12:09

    In our day?

    12:11-12:17

In our culture, when people have this appetite, this craving for sin and perversion?

    12:18-12:19

    Politicians notice that.

    12:19-12:21

That's why these laws are getting passed.

    12:23-12:25

    What are you talking about?

    12:26-12:28

    Things like removing Ten Commandments.

    12:28-12:30

    Things like applauding perversion.

    12:31-12:34

Things like advocating murder of babies through abortion.

    12:34-12:36

    Things like rewarding laziness.

    12:37-12:50

On and on and on we can go, but you have to see that much of what's happening from a government perspective is done to cater to people's sins.

    12:52-13:03

Like James and Peter found out, and like we are finding out, that it is okay to insult.

    13:04-13:10

We're the only demographic that it is okay to ridicule.

    13:11-13:14

We're the only demographic that it's okay to persecute.

    13:16-13:18

So wicked leaders bring hard times.

    13:20-13:23

But secondly, hard times bring hard prayer.

    13:24-13:25

    What's hard prayer?

    13:26-13:26

When you pray, you pray for the good.

    13:26-13:27

Pray hard, that's what we're talking about.

    13:28-13:29

    Hard times bring hard prayer.

    13:29-13:30

    Look at verse 5.

    13:30-13:47

It says, "So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church." "Earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church." I'm just going to stop here.

    13:47-13:49

    Hard times bring hard prayer.

    13:50-13:52

Do you wonder, for the church, do you wonder?

    13:55-13:58

I'm thinking specifically of John, James' brother.

    13:59-14:12

You wonder if you ever had this thought, "Why was my brother killed when Peter wasn't?" Both of these things happening at the same time.

    14:13-14:15

    Isn't that a legitimate question?

    14:15-14:16

    Can we be honest?

    14:18-14:23

We're reading this on the page, but imagine being James' brother, or his mother.

    14:25-14:26

    Why did he die?

    14:27-14:31

    Yet Peter didn't.

    14:33-14:35

Why would God allow James to die?

    14:35-14:37

Why would God allow Peter to live?

    14:37-14:42

And you're sitting there right now and you're like, "Yeah, Pastor Jeff, explain that." Explain that!

    14:44-14:46

    And here's the truth, church, I can't.

    14:47-14:49

    I cannot explain that.

    14:51-14:55

Because God is God and I am not, right?

    14:57-15:00

I have two friends years apart.

    15:01-15:03

Both were in a motorcycle accident hitting a deer.

    15:04-15:06

My one friend is alive and well.

    15:07-15:08

    My other friend died.

    15:09-15:11

You're like, "Why is that?" I don't know.

    15:13-15:14

    I don't know.

    15:16-15:26

You can have - Where one delivers a healthy baby and the other loses the child.

    15:26-15:28

    How can you explain that?

    15:29-15:30

    You can't.

    15:32-15:38

I had two friends with cancer. One beat cancer. The other died from the cancer.

    15:39-15:40

You can tell stories like that.

    15:41-15:42

But have you ever wondered, like, why?

    15:43-15:46

Why does this person live and why does this person die?

    15:49-15:56

And then another question, when you look at the text here, "Did the church even pray for James?" The Bible doesn't say.

    15:58-16:06

I imagine they did when they found out, or maybe these events happened so fast, maybe they happened so fast he was arrested and executed before the church even knew what was going on.

    16:07-16:08

    I don't know, the Bible doesn't say.

    16:10-16:11

But here's what I do know.

    16:15-16:19

It seems that everyone got more fired up for prayer while Peter was in jail.

    16:21-16:24

I think maybe, maybe it was because James was killed.

    16:27-16:32

Prayer is always serious business, but sometimes God allows circumstances in our lives to ramp it up.

    16:33-16:42

And that alone is probably a good reason for God to allow hard times, because hard times gets us praying like we should be praying all the time anyway.

    16:44-16:46

the wicked people ruling the nation.

    16:46-16:47

    What happens?

    16:47-16:48

    Number three, write this down.

    16:48-16:51

    Hard prayer sees God move.

    16:53-16:54

    Hard prayer sees God move.

    16:54-16:55

    Look at verse 6.

    16:57-17:03

It says, "Now Herod was about to bring him out.

    17:06-17:16

On that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, that centuries before the door, were guarding the prison.

    17:16-17:19

You think here it was a little paranoid that Peter was going to get out of jail again.

    17:19-17:20

    You see what's happening here.

    17:21-17:26

Chained to two guards and guards at the door.

    17:28-17:29

    This is called maximum security.

    17:30-17:33

But that's not the thing that amuses me about this passage.

    17:33-17:35

Here's the thing that absolutely kills me.

    17:35-17:35

    What was Peter doing?

    17:37-17:38

    He was sleeping.

    17:39-17:40

    He was sleeping.

    17:41-17:42

    Let's be honest.

    17:43-17:47

If that was you, would you be sleeping?

    17:48-17:49

    I'll just speak for myself.

    17:49-17:50

    I would not be sleeping.

    17:50-18:01

I'm chained between two guards, and I know that night, or that day, I'm going to hear footsteps coming down the hall where they're coming to take me out and execute me just as they did James.

    18:01-18:03

And I'm chained to these two guards.

    18:04-18:06

I'm doing a lot of things.

    18:06-18:08

But sleeping soundly is not one of them.

    18:10-18:11

That's exactly what Peter was doing.

    18:13-18:15

I wonder what the soldiers thought.

    18:17-18:19

This is the guy that Herod's so afraid of?

    18:20-18:21

    Sleeping beauty here?

    18:21-18:22

    Look at verse 7.

    18:23-18:31

"And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell." I imagine the guards were sleeping too.

    18:31-18:33

    Peter's probably pretty boring.

    18:34-18:34

    Just sleeping.

    18:36-18:39

Okay, so this angel shows up, shown in his cell.

    18:40-18:41

    Look at the next sentence.

    18:41-18:43

"He struck Peter on the side and woke him.

    18:44-18:56

Then get up quickly, and the chains fell off his hands." So Peter wasn't just like, "Oh, I took a cat nap." He was sleeping so soundly that the angel had to hit him.

    18:57-18:58

    Like, "Hey, hey, get up.

    18:59-19:02

Get up, get up." He had to hit him to wake him up.

    19:02-19:04

That's how soundly Peter was sleeping.

    19:07-19:17

In verse 8, it says, "The angel said to him, 'Dress yourself, and put on your sandals.' And he did so.

    19:18-19:25

And he said to him, 'Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.' And he went out and followed him.

    19:26-19:35

He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, thought he was seeing a vision.

    19:37-19:42

When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city.

    19:42-19:45

It opened for them of its own accord.

    19:47-19:49

    Like going into Walmart.

    19:49-19:58

Just "shhh." And they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him.

    19:59-20:12

When Peter came to himself, he said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent His angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod." From all that the Jewish people were expecting.

    20:14-20:15

    That would be his death.

    20:16-20:17

    Stop there for a second.

    20:18-20:19

    So this angel shows up.

    20:19-20:20

    Peter changes his two guards.

    20:20-20:21

    Apparently, everybody's sleeping.

    20:22-20:26

And this angel shows up and slaps him and says, "Hey, get dressed.

    20:26-20:28

    Get dressed, you're leaving.

    20:29-20:38

"Peter, put your coat on. We're leaving." And the Bible says Peter really at this point didn't have any idea what was going on.

    20:38-20:39

He was in that deep of sleep.

    20:39-20:45

How many people have been in that deep of a sleep that it takes you like 10 minutes to wake up with the aid of coffee and everything else?

    20:46-20:49

Those first 10 minutes are just an absolute blur.

    20:49-20:50

    That was Peter.

    20:50-20:51

You know, this is all happening.

    20:51-20:53

    He's like, "Am I dreaming?

    20:54-20:55

Or am I seeing a vision?

    20:56-21:01

Is this actually happening?" He was like nearly sleepwalking through this whole thing.

    21:03-21:14

And then it says he finally woke up, and he's like, "That really did happen?" Well, I probably shouldn't be standing on the street being Jerusalem's most wanted.

    21:15-21:26

1st Paul says when he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, whose other name was Mark, "Many were gathered together and were praying.

    21:28-21:34

And when He knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer.

    21:35-21:49

Recognizing Peter's voice and her joy, she did not open the gate, but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate." Okay, let's not criticize this poor girl because I can totally see this happening.

    21:50-21:52

    You know, Peter's in jail.

    21:52-21:55

Everybody's praying for him, and then she goes and she clearly hears Peter's voice.

    21:56-21:57

She doesn't know what to do.

    21:57-22:12

She just runs in and she's like, "Hey, Peter's outside!" I'm like, "Well, did you let him in?" The first 15 says, "They said to her, 'You are out of your mind.'" She kept insisting that it was so.

    22:12-22:24

And they kept saying, "It is this angel." There was this old Jewish belief that you had this guardian angel that could assume your form and that's what they thought was going on here.

    22:25-22:32

It says, "But Peter continued knocking." "Hello, hello, I just broke out of jail.

    22:33-22:38

Somebody, open the door." It says, "When they opened, they saw him and were amazed.

    22:39-22:45

But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of prison.

    22:47-22:50

And he said all these things to James and to the brothers.

    22:50-22:54

Then he departed and went to another place.

    22:57-23:00

This James obviously isn't the James from verse 2.

    23:01-23:03

This James is actually Jesus' half-brother.

    23:05-23:07

They had the same mother, but they had different fathers.

    23:08-23:12

And this James was actually the head of the church at the time.

    23:12-23:14

We'll see that here in a few weeks.

    23:16-23:23

Verse 18 says, "Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.

    23:23-23:24

    Do you think?

    23:25-23:35

Do you think if there's an entire squad of soldiers guarding one guy, two of whom are chained to the guy, and the next morning the guy's not there, do you think there's going to be a little bit of a disturbance?

    23:36-23:40

Like, "Hey, where's Peter at?" Yeah, about that.

    23:41-23:42

    We don't have a clue.

    23:43-23:48

And unfortunately for them, and it wasn't going to go well.

    23:49-24:03

Verse 19 says, "And after Herod searched for him and did not find him, he examined the centuries in order that they should be put to death." That was it. If you were guarding a prisoner and you lost a prisoner, you died.

    24:03-24:04

That was just the way it was.

    24:05-24:10

Then Herod went down from Judea to Caesarea and spent some time there.

    24:10-24:12

I imagine that was like vacation, right?

    24:12-24:26

Like, you know what, I'm going to hit the golf course for a while, maybe hit a couple beaches, because I just had the number one person behind this whole Jesus movement thing that's happening.

    24:27-24:29

I had him, and he completely vanished.

    24:29-24:31

And now it's time to get out of town for a bit.

    24:34-24:39

Before we move on, I want to ask you, how could Peter sleep so soundly?

    24:42-24:43

And the answer is very clear.

    24:43-24:45

He just had a deep trust in God.

    24:46-24:49

Again, this was the third time he'd been to jail.

    24:49-24:52

He'd already seen God's hand at work in so many huge ways.

    24:52-24:58

I think Peter just trusted God to the point of, I'm just going to take a nap until the Lord shows up.

    25:01-25:04

Right now, everyone is so worried about the upcoming election.

    25:04-25:07

You hear people talking about it.

    25:07-25:08

You see it on social media.

    25:08-25:09

    On both sides.

    25:09-25:13

If so-and-so gets in, This country's in real trouble.

    25:14-25:20

And if this person gets in, this country is going to be in really bad shape.

    25:23-25:26

I'd like to remind you that it doesn't matter how wicked the leader is.

    25:28-25:31

It doesn't matter how wicked the actions are.

    25:31-25:33

    God will not be stopped.

    25:34-25:38

And in this passage, very clearly, the church prayed and God moved.

    25:41-25:42

    This brings another question.

    25:42-25:51

You notice in verse 16, it says, "When they opened the door and saw Peter, they were amazed." Doesn't that strike you as a little bit interesting?

    25:52-25:53

What were they doing at the time?

    25:55-25:56

    What were they doing?

    25:57-25:57

    They were praying.

    25:58-25:59

Okay, what were they praying for?

    26:01-26:01

    Specifically?

    26:02-26:04

Peter to get out of jail, right?

    26:04-26:09

So Peter gets out of jail and everybody's completely shocked that Peter got out of jail.

    26:10-26:11

    Everyone was amazed.

    26:14-26:17

So the question is why are we so amazed when God answers prayer?

    26:19-26:22

I'll be honest with you, I'm amazed every single time.

    26:22-26:26

We're talking 20 years into walking with the Lord.

    26:28-26:33

Every single time God answers prayer, it's always amazing to me.

    26:35-26:49

And some people say, I wrote some Bible scholars and commentators said, "These people lack faith." "These people lack faith because if they really had faith, they wouldn't have been so amazed when Peter showed up." Really? Do you think that's true?

    26:51-26:57

I don't believe for a second that being amazed is a lack of faith.

    26:57-26:58

    I don't believe that.

    27:00-27:15

I don't believe being amazed at watching the hand of God at work - I'd like to remind you that when you pray, I'm going to tell you something now that's going to be revolutionary for some of you.

    27:15-27:17

Some of you have never heard this.

    27:18-27:23

When you pray, it is not about the amount of faith that you have.

    27:25-27:27

It is about who your faith is in.

    27:29-27:30

    Now understand what I'm saying.

    27:32-27:40

Some people say, "I just don't have enough faith." as if your faith is like this gas tank that you have to have filled up.

    27:40-27:45

And if your gas tank is full of faith, that means God's going to answer your prayers.

    27:46-27:53

And if your gas tank is like near "E" on faith, God might not answer your prayers because you don't have faith.

    27:53-27:54

    And that's not true.

    27:56-27:58

Because it doesn't matter the size of your faith.

    27:58-28:02

What matters is who you're putting your faith in.

    28:07-28:13

Okay, so it's wintertime and this little boy was so excited to go out and ice skate on the pond.

    28:13-28:15

    Right? He was so excited.

    28:16-28:22

But winter was just a couple days old at this point and the kid gets his skates on and he's so excited.

    28:22-28:28

He's going to go ice skating and he comes running out and he just jumps on the ice and goes right through.

    28:30-28:31

    The pond was barely frozen.

    28:34-28:36

So he gets fished out of the icy water.

    28:38-28:45

And over the course of the next week, more snow, deeper freeze, and that pond froze over again.

    28:46-28:51

But this time, it froze over much deeper so that it was safe.

    28:52-28:56

And his parents took him down to the pond, and they said, "It's safe to go on the pond.

    28:56-29:06

With the weather that we've had, that's going to hold you." But this time the kid was so unsure because of what happened the previous week, he didn't just jump onto the ice.

    29:06-29:23

This time, because of his previous experience, he kind of edged himself onto the ice, sort of tested, and then after a while realized, "Okay, this is going to hold me." Now here's the point.

    29:25-29:31

Week 1, the kid had a lot of faith, but what he had his faith in wasn't strong.

    29:33-29:40

Week 2, the kid had very little faith, but what he had his faith in was very strong.

    29:42-29:49

So you see, it doesn't matter how much faith you have, what matters is what you put your faith in.

    29:49-29:52

In fact, Jesus said if you have faith like a what?

    29:53-29:54

    Like a mustard seed.

    29:54-30:01

Jesus said even if you have faith like a mustard seed, the tiniest seed, He says God will do big things in your life.

    30:01-30:03

Because it's not about your faith.

    30:03-30:05

It's about the power of God.

    30:07-30:10

You see, I wasn't at this prayer meeting.

    30:10-30:15

I can't tell you how deep their faith was, but their faith was in the right person.

    30:16-30:17

    It's okay to be amazed.

    30:21-30:22

    Hard prayer sees God move.

    30:25-30:29

And finally for today, God moves and His kingdom advances.

    30:31-30:33

God moves and His kingdom advances.

    30:35-30:38

So we have a little shift in the scene here.

    30:38-30:49

Still talking about Herod, but now he went to Caesarea, spent some time, and fast forward a bit, "Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon.

    30:51-31:02

They came to him with one accord and having persuaded Blastus..." I'm sorry, this isn't in my notes or anything.

    31:02-31:03

I'm just going to stop here for a second.

    31:04-31:05

Isn't Blastus a really cool name?

    31:08-31:13

I was studying it this week, and I'm like, why did my parents name me Jeffrey?

    31:13-31:15

Why couldn't they have named me Blastus?

    31:16-31:18

    I mean, that is tough!

    31:20-31:22

I'm sorry, what was I talking about?

    31:23-31:23

    Okay.

    31:25-31:42

"The herald was angry with people at Tyron's side, and they came to him with one accord and having persuaded Blastus, the King's chamberlain, they asked for peace because their country depended on the King's country for food." Like what in the world is going on here?

    31:43-31:47

It says, first of all, "Now Herod was angry." Why was he angry? We don't know.

    31:47-31:48

The Bible doesn't tell us. We don't know.

    31:49-31:50

    But we do know this.

    31:52-31:57

Herod's region supplied food for the region of Tyre and Sidon.

    31:58-32:00

    They were a food supplier.

    32:00-32:06

Even though Tyre and Sidon weren't in his jurisdiction, they exported food to them.

    32:08-32:10

Well, Herod was mad at them for something.

    32:10-32:17

My guess is something irrational He seemed a few fries short of a Happy Meal, if you know what I mean.

    32:19-33:03

Well, they wanted to make peace with Herod, and they realized what an unreasonable man he was, so they said, "We need to find somebody with an awesome name to get on our side, to help us." "Oh, the King's Chamberlain, his name is..." "What was his name?" "Oh, come on, say it right." "What was his name?" "Blastus." Alright, verse 21 says, "On an appointed day, Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them." So see, Herod had power over them.

    33:04-33:23

And he decided with these delegates from Tyre and Sidon in town, that he was going to put on a display of the majesty that he thought he had. I was reading this week of what some of the early church historians said about this event that they actually met at an amphitheater that Herod the Great built - this Herod's grandfather.

    33:25-33:37

But interestingly they said these robes that are mentioned here were actually silver and that he actually came out before the people early in the morning. The sun was reflecting off of his silver robes.

    33:37-33:45

And they said it was such this dazzling, glorious display as he came out reflecting the rays of the sun.

    33:48-34:05

Verse 23 says, "Immediately, an angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last." What?

    34:08-34:09

    Does your Bible say that?

    34:11-34:18

Well, interestingly, this is the second time an angel shows up in this passage, but this time it's not for a jailbreak.

    34:20-34:23

This time he shows up and says he struck Herod down.

    34:24-34:27

It says he was eaten by worms.

    34:28-34:29

    What's that all about?

    34:29-34:31

I did some study this week.

    34:36-34:38

literally refers to the head of a tapeworm.

    34:42-34:48

So what probably happened was Herod had specifically what's called a dog tape.

    34:48-34:53

And this was a tapeworm that was common in places where sheep and cattle were raised.

    34:54-35:01

And they say what happens is the sheep and the cattle have them, and they transfer them to the dogs, and then the dogs usually transfer them to the people.

    35:04-35:11

But if you get one of these dog tapes, one of these tapeworms, it is absolutely horrible.

    35:12-35:29

What happens is these cysts form on the liver and in the abdomen, and these cysts form and grow and form and grow, and then they rupture, and they say that when they rupture, they can release upwards of 2 million of these little worms into your abdomen.

    35:30-35:37

And that rupture, in many cases, and certainly in Herod's case, that rupture caused death.

    35:39-35:46

One early historian said that Herod lived for five more days in absolutely horrible pain.

    35:47-35:48

    And then he died.

    35:50-35:58

Verse 24 says, "But," everybody say "but." Circle that in your Bible.

    35:59-36:06

"So Herod breathed his last, but the word of God increased and multiplied.

    36:10-36:16

And Barnabas and Rusal returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service.

    36:19-36:28

Remember, back in chapter 11, verse 30, Barnabas and Rusal were taking relief because of the famine from Antioch down to Jerusalem.

    36:29-36:32

Now they are heading back to Antioch.

    36:32-36:50

It says, "Bringing with them John, So they deliver the supplies and you know what kind of guy Barnabas was, such an encourager, such a kind man.

    36:50-37:01

I can kind of hear this conversation in my head where Barnabas says, "You know what Saul?" Actually Mark was Barnabas' cousin we find out in Colossians 4.10.

    37:02-37:03

But I can see Barnabas saying, "You know what Saul?

    37:05-37:21

This is my little cousin, this is my little cousin." and I think he's got a promising future as a missionary, and I think it would be good if he went with us back to Antioch and was like, "What's the absolute worst that could happen, right?" Hold that thought.

    37:23-37:28

The point here is, Herod died, and the church lives on.

    37:30-37:31

And that's the way it's always going to be.

    37:33-37:42

whether it's the Herods, whether it's the Hitlers, whether it's the Hussain's, they've all come and gone.

    37:44-37:45

    But the church lives on.

    37:46-37:48

You know, Herod committed a lot of sin.

    37:51-37:53

He was violently going after the church.

    37:53-37:55

He killed James. He imprisoned Peter.

    37:56-38:02

But the Bible makes it very clear that none of these things were the real sin that he committed.

    38:02-38:03

Saul did these types of things.

    38:05-38:07

Why didn't Saul get eaten by worms?

    38:10-38:11

I want you to look back again.

    38:11-38:13

Herod's real sin - his ultimate sin.

    38:13-38:14

    Look at verse 23.

    38:16-38:21

It says, "An angel of the Lord struck him down because..." See that next phrase?

    38:22-38:30

"He did not give God the glory." That's the sin.

    38:32-38:37

And church, you don't have to be a king to do this.

    38:37-38:40

You don't have to wear shiny robes or have a throne.

    38:40-38:42

You don't have to have a claim.

    38:45-38:49

You just have to withhold glory to God.

    38:52-38:54

You see, it got in Herod's head, didn't it?

    38:54-38:59

Verse 22 says, "The people were shouting, 'The voice of a God and not a man!'" He was eating this up.

    39:03-39:08

He got to the point in his life where he sort of had a role reversal with God.

    39:11-39:17

That he thought he was worthy of glory, and God was not.

    39:19-39:29

And I want to say to you, to anybody who's listening, that this applies to, you don't want to give God the rightful place that He deserves in your life, Is that you today?

    39:29-39:37

Is there somebody sitting here saying, "I don't want God to be the King of my life." Well, God created you.

    39:38-39:40

He sent His Son to die for you.

    39:40-39:46

And that tells you nothing about your greatness, but it tells you everything about God's greatness.

    39:46-39:48

    He alone deserves the glory.

    39:49-39:50

You don't want to give God glory.

    39:50-39:52

You want to make much of yourself.

    39:52-40:00

You want to rule over your own life and refused to allow God to be your God, ask Herod how that worked out for him.

    40:02-40:05

You think that you're so exalted that you're beyond your Creator?

    40:07-40:14

You look at what the Bible says about the grace and love and mercy of God, and you would spit in His face?

    40:16-40:18

It is not going to go well for you.

    40:22-40:31

As I close, anybody here that knows my wife and I, knows this, we love to laugh.

    40:33-40:35

And do you know the Bible says that God laughs?

    40:37-40:39

Do you know the Bible says that God laughs?

    40:39-40:45

Well, it's not at cat memes or videos of people falling off ladders.

    40:47-40:50

The Bible tells us in three separate places that God laughs.

    40:52-40:55

We need to pay close attention because it's always at the same thing.

    40:55-40:56

    Do we have those verses?

    40:57-40:59

    This is from Psalm 2.

    40:59-41:02

"Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?

    41:03-41:19

The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed - that's Jesus, ultimately - saying, 'Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.'" Do you see what that's saying?

    41:20-41:25

"God doesn't tell me what to do!" And how does God respond?

    41:27-41:29

"He who sits in the heavens laughs.

    41:30-41:36

The Lord holds them in derision." So if you're sitting here today and you're like, "God doesn't tell me what to do!

    41:37-41:39

I'm the king of my own life!" Do you know what God's doing?

    41:40-41:41

    He's laughing at you.

    41:42-41:43

    God's like, "Really?

    41:45-41:47

It just happened to me on Friday.

    41:49-41:51

I had some parenting discipline issues.

    41:51-41:52

    I won't get into detail.

    41:54-42:00

But one of my children - I won't mention his name, but he's the younger one - he was grounded from television.

    42:01-42:02

He was not happy at that sentence.

    42:04-42:11

He came up to me and he said, "Who do you think you are?" I thought that was hilarious.

    42:12-42:13

    I'm like, "I don't think I'm anybody.

    42:13-42:18

I know who I am. I'm your father." See, that's the attitude that God has.

    42:19-42:25

When people are like, "Who do you think you are telling me what to do, God?" God's like, "Seriously?

    42:26-42:27

Who do I think I am?

    42:28-42:29

    How about the Almighty?

    42:30-42:32

How about the Everlasting to Everlasting?

    42:32-42:35

How about the One who speaks worlds into existence?

    42:36-42:37

    That's who I think I am.

    42:37-42:42

Who do you think you are?" God thinks that's pretty funny.

    42:43-42:45

    Psalm 37, verses 12 and 13.

    42:46-42:47

Let's see if we pick up a theme.

    42:48-42:51

"The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him.

    42:52-43:07

But the Lord laughs at the wicked, for He sees that His day is coming." You know, for the people that not just hate God, but hate God's people and plot against God's people, what's God doing once again?

    43:08-43:08

    He's laughing.

    43:09-43:11

God's like, "I know how this story ends, bro.

    43:11-43:13

    I wrote the book!

    43:14-43:16

Do you think you're going to change that?

    43:16-43:17

    God thinks that's hilarious.

    43:19-43:20

    One more.

    43:20-43:22

    Psalm 59, verses 7 and 8.

    43:23-43:35

It says, "There they are, bellowing with their mouths with swords in their lips, for who, they think, will hear us?" There again.

    43:37-43:39

God's not going to tell me what to do.

    43:40-43:50

But you, O Lord, As your Bibles say, "Jehoi Lord, laugh at them." You hold the nations in derision.

    43:52-43:56

So you can oppose God, but it's pointless.

    43:59-44:03

He will laugh, but He won't be stopped.

    44:05-44:12

As the worship team and our ushers come up, we're going to continue in worship by receiving the Lord's Supper.

    44:13-44:29

You know, as we look at just one picture here in God's Word of an enemy of God who was defeated, coming to the Lord's table reminds us once again that victory has already been won.

    44:29-44:38

We are not a people that hopefully someday - hopefully someday we will experience the victory that is Jesus Christ.

    44:39-44:41

And here are people who are living in that victory today.

    44:43-44:46

Because sin and death have been defeated.

    44:47-44:52

Guilt and shame and condemnation are no longer a thing for God's people.

    44:53-45:00

And when we gather around the table, we're reminded of the awesome price that was paid so that our sins could be forgiven.

    45:01-45:06

So our worship team is going to lead us in a verse and a chorus while the elements are passed out.

    45:06-45:15

And I would ask that you hold on to them sign of unity in our fellowship, we'll take a pause from singing and receive the Lord's Supper together.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 12:1-25

  1. Why did God let James die, but delivered Peter? How would you have explained that had James" mother asked you? Is it even OK to ask "why" in cases like this?

  2. What was Herod’s crime against God (Acts 12:23)? How does someone commit that crime? Does this still happen today?

  3. Imagine a coworker opens up to you, saying how worried they are concerning who is going to be the next president. "If (whatever candidate) gets in there, we are in big trouble." In light of what we read in Acts 12, what would you say to this person in response?
