We're going to be starting our new series this week, maybe you've heard.

    00:43-00:46

Turn in your Bibles with me please to the book of Revelation.

    00:47-00:55

While you're turning there, Bible students, I want to give you a little introduction to how we are approaching this book.

    00:56-01:00

Because there really have been four main approaches to interpreting Revelation.

    01:00-01:02

How do we go after this book?

    01:02-01:06

Well, there's four main approaches if you want to jot these down.

    01:06-01:14

I'm giving you this for clarity's sake so you understand where I'm coming from as we move forward, okay? The first approach is called the Preterist approach.

    01:15-01:34

The Preterist approach. That approach believes that everything described in the book of Revelation happened in the first century. Like, it's all been done. But there's a huge problem with that approach, is because Revelation itself says that it is prophecy, and obviously the second coming of Jesus Christ has not yet happened.

    01:34-01:41

So the idea that this is all done and over, I don't see that in the text.

    01:41-01:43

I just do not see that at all.

    01:43-01:44

    It's forthcoming.

    01:45-01:48

The second view is the historicist approach.

    01:48-01:52

And that view says that Revelation serves as an outline for church history.

    01:53-02:01

You just sort of look at the history of the church over the last 2,000 years, and Revelation sort of covers the timeline of church history.

    02:01-02:04

And I think that that view has some problems.

    02:05-02:10

But the third way people approach Revelation is the idealist approach.

    02:11-02:15

And they say this, "Revelation is not really history, and it's not really prophecy.

    02:15-02:24

Revelation is just like this poem, this extended metaphor of the battle of good versus evil." That's really what Revelation is.

    02:24-02:41

It's just sort of talking about how God is good, and Satan hates God and his people, when this battle sort of played out. And again, you're going to see as we go through the text, Revelation is not presented that way. The fourth approach is called the futurist approach.

    02:41-02:49

The futurist approach. That view believes that chapters 6 through 22 take place in the future.

    02:50-02:54

I would suggest to you also probably chapters 4 and 5, we'll talk about that.

    02:55-03:27

But this view believes that, approaches Revelation rather, in a way that everything is about real people and real events that are yet to come. And this view takes God at His word, that revelation is prophecy. So if you, however long you've been here and heard sermons at Harvest Bible Chapel, I think you know the approach that we take to God's Word here. And the word that I'm going to use, you're probably going to hear me say it a lot over these next several months, is the word Straightforwardly.

    03:28-03:32

That's how I read and understand and approach God's Word.

    03:33-03:34

    Straightforwardly.

    03:35-03:38

Assuming that God means what He says.

    03:39-03:41

I don't believe that God gave us a puzzle book.

    03:42-03:49

I don't believe God gave us some cryptic writing and said, "See if you can figure it out." I don't believe that.

    03:49-03:56

I believe God wants us to know some things, so He wrote it down so we could read it and and know some things.

    03:57-04:07

That's why when I read the Bible for myself, or when I teach the Bible, or any of the other guys get up here and preach the Bible, it's always straightforwardly, God means what He says.

    04:08-04:13

And with that, this is also important, we allow Scripture to interpret Scripture.

    04:13-04:25

Especially in Revelation, we're going to be seeing the Old Testament being the key to unlock our understanding of the concepts of Revelation.

    04:25-04:29

Do you know the book of Revelation does not directly quote the Old Testament?

    04:30-04:37

But, out of the 404 verses in the book of Revelation, 404 verses, okay?

    04:38-04:42

278 of those verses refer to truths from the Old Testament.

    04:43-04:44

So that's how we're going after Revelation.

    04:45-04:54

We're going to be reading it verse by verse, assuming God meant what He said, seeking to understand it straightforwardly.

    04:55-05:02

Let's pray. Father in heaven, as we approach your Word, we do it with reverence, God, because this is the book that you wrote.

    05:02-05:09

And I pray, Father, that your Holy Spirit would open our spiritual eyes that we can see very clearly what you wrote.

    05:10-05:17

There are some people, Father, who are in this room and some people are going to be listening to this who maybe have not ever read Revelation.

    05:17-05:19

This is going to be a huge blessing for them.

    05:19-05:22

There are some people, Father, in this room and hearing this who don't know You.

    05:23-05:31

And I pray that You would use this as a way that You bring them to repentance, that You grant repentance through Your Holy Spirit working with this Word.

    05:33-05:40

Father, just as Sam demonstrated earlier, Father, we want to see Your hand at work transforming lives.

    05:41-05:43

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

    05:43-05:46

So, have you seen any good movies lately?

    05:47-05:48

Who has seen a good movie recently?

    05:49-05:51

    Nobody. Awesome.

    05:52-05:54

Peter, you saw a good movie recently. Thank you.

    05:54-05:55

What did you see that was good?

    05:56-05:57

Love Finds You and Sugar Creek.

    05:58-06:00

I got to admit, I've not heard of that one.

    06:00-06:01

    Well, Peter, thank you.

    06:01-06:06

Apparently, you're the only person that knows how to find decent movies because nobody else has seen a good movie.

    06:07-06:09

All right. Who has ever seen a good movie?

    06:09-06:13

Okay, some of you are really harsh critics because some of you did not put your hand up.

    06:13-06:14

I've never seen a good movie.

    06:15-06:17

Calm down there, Cisco and Ebert.

    06:18-06:22

All right, how many... let's try this then, since that works so awesomely.

    06:23-06:32

How many of you have seen a movie trailer, and after seeing the movie trailer you thought to yourself, "I want to see that movie"? How many of you have done that?

    06:32-06:35

Okay, thank you. Should have started with that, Justin.

    06:35-06:37

I should have started with that.

    06:37-06:39

Movie trailers, let's talk about movie trailers for a second.

    06:40-06:41

I had to look this up, I didn't know this.

    06:41-06:42

Do you know why it's called a trailer?

    06:44-06:45

They used to show them at the end of movies.

    06:46-06:51

But there was a problem with that, because after the movie was over, people left.

    06:52-06:54

I'm not sticking around to watch a commercial.

    06:54-07:14

So they're like, "Well, we'll put the trailer at the beginning, so if you show up early for the movie, you've got to watch our commercial." But we've all, at times, have seen a trailer, a movie preview, and thought to yourself, "Man, I've got to see that. I've got to see that." That happened to me this past week. A trailer came out for a TV show that I love.

    07:14-07:17

The next season's coming out and the trailer came out.

    07:17-07:20

I watched it like three or four times in a row.

    07:20-07:26

I was like, "This is gonna be so cool!" Okay, well, a good trailer gives you some things.

    07:27-07:30

First of all, a good trailer gives you the premise of the movie, right?

    07:30-07:32

You want to know like, what's this movie about?

    07:32-07:33

    Is it action?

    07:33-07:34

    Is it comedy?

    07:34-07:36

    Is it drama?

    07:36-07:38

    Is it a scary movie?

    07:38-07:39

    It gives you the premise.

    07:41-07:45

But a good movie trailer also promises to deliver something, doesn't it?

    07:46-07:47

    It promises to deliver something.

    07:49-08:07

They say things like, "This is the feel-good movie of the year." Or, "This movie will have you on the edge of your seat." Or, "You will never look at possums the same way again." Or whatever, but they make some sort of a promise that they want you to go see the movie so they can deliver it.

    08:08-08:16

So they give you a premise, they give you a promise, they give you the person, the movie, about, right? Who's the star? Who's the main character? Who is the protagonist?

    08:16-08:29

Who's the person the movie's about? And then the trailer obviously has to give you a preview of the action, or the drama, or a preview of the comedy.

    08:30-08:35

Just to give you a little taste so that you want to go see the whole thing.

    08:36-08:45

Well, this introduction to Revelation, this passage that we're looking at today verses 1 through 8, this passage is a movie trailer for the rest of Revelation.

    08:45-09:27

Okay? Everything we're looking at today is really the trailer for everything that follows, because we're going to see in these first day verses, we're going to see the premise, we're going to see the promise, we're going to see the person, and we're going to see the preview of everything that's coming over these next several months as we go through the book of Revelation. This introduction today, These verses today, reading through these and looking really closely at what is ahead in the rest of the book, these should make you want to say, "I want to absorb every single word that the Lord is going to give me from Revelation this year." So those are the elements of a good movie trailer.

    09:27-09:31

Those are certainly the elements of this teaser here.

    09:31-09:32

So write some things down here.

    09:32-09:36

Number one on your outline, let's look at the premise of what Revelation is all about.

    09:37-09:37

    This is the premise.

    09:38-09:39

Let's look at the first couple of verses.

    09:40-09:43

We're going to break some things down here because there is a lot happening right out of the gate.

    09:43-09:44

    All right?

    09:44-09:45

Look at the first two verses.

    09:45-09:55

"The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants the things that must soon take place.

    09:55-10:07

He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John, who bore witness to the word of God into the testimony of Jesus Christ, even to all that he saw.

    10:07-10:10

So right now we have the premise of Revelation.

    10:10-10:11

    What is Revelation about?

    10:12-10:20

Well the word Revelation, the Greek word, apokalupsis, means uncovering or unveiling.

    10:20-10:22

And it's used a lot in the New Testament.

    10:22-11:17

But what Revelation literally means, what that word literally means, is something that was previously hidden or not seen and now it is uncovered. Like God says, "Nobody's seen this before, but now I'm going to pull the curtain back and let you see what's back here." That's what Revelation means. Right? That's why I struggle, church, I'm going to be honest with you, I don't want this to sound critical, but I struggle when I've heard other churches and pastors say, "We'll never cover Revelation. It's too controversial." I've heard pastors say, "I'll never touch Revelation. You're never going to hear me preach your Revelation." God gave us Revelation not to conceal things. He gave us Revelation to reveal some things. God wants us to know what He wrote down in Revelation. So why in In the world would we ignore that, right?

    11:18-11:21

So it's the revelation, it's the uncovering.

    11:21-11:21

    What are we uncovering?

    11:22-11:22

    What are we unveiling?

    11:22-11:23

    Well, look at your text.

    11:24-11:25

We're going to see what the text says.

    11:25-11:27

It's the revelation of Jesus Christ.

    11:27-11:33

You see, in the Gospels, we saw the humiliated Christ.

    11:34-11:40

In the Gospels, in our church, we spent, what was it, two years going through the Gospel of Mark.

    11:41-11:50

What we saw was Jesus' majesty was veiled, but he would occasionally give glimpses of his glory, right?

    11:51-11:54

What's the most notable glimpse, obviously, is the transfiguration.

    11:56-12:04

In the transfiguration, Jesus gave three of his disciples just a peek of his glory.

    12:05-12:17

And every time Jesus performed a miracle, he was giving just a little glimpse that he's It's not just some Jewish teacher that he is glorious and awesome God.

    12:18-12:20

This is the revelation of Jesus Christ.

    12:20-12:22

God is unveiling who Jesus Christ really is.

    12:22-12:24

I want you to think about something.

    12:25-12:27

This has been going through my mind a lot this week.

    12:27-12:31

You realize the last time the world saw Jesus, where was he?

    12:32-12:34

The last time the world saw Jesus, where was he?

    12:35-12:36

He was on the cross, right?

    12:37-12:44

Yeah, Jesus appeared to hundreds of people, but he only appeared to his disciples, and to people who believed in him and followed him.

    12:44-12:46

    He only appeared to believers.

    12:46-12:52

But to the world, the last time they saw Jesus Christ, he was beaten and bloody, hanging on the cross.

    12:53-12:57

In Revelation, the premise is this, the world's about to see Jesus for who he really is.

    12:58-13:08

Notice it says, "He made it known by sending his angel." This is the only book in the New Testament that's communicated by an angel.

    13:09-13:12

Angels are actually mentioned 71 times in the book of Revelation.

    13:13-13:14

    So mark that.

    13:14-13:23

And who is it given to? Well it says, "To his servant John, the disciple whom Jesus loved." A couple of weeks ago we looked at John chapter 21.

    13:24-13:36

And Jesus said of John, in verse 22, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?" We saw that the rumor was circulating that, oh, Jesus said John was never gonna die.

    13:36-13:38

And John's like, no, he didn't say that.

    13:38-13:40

He said, if it's my will that he remain until I come.

    13:41-13:47

John did not live forever, but he did outlive the rest of the disciples.

    13:48-13:51

History tells us they were all killed for their faith.

    13:52-13:54

John outlived them all in order to record revelation.

    13:54-13:56

He wrote this about 95 AD.

    13:56-14:08

But even though John wasn't killed at this point for his faith, He was still suffering for his faith because when he wrote Revelation, he was exiled on the island of Patmos.

    14:09-14:12

It was basically a prison island.

    14:13-14:15

The Romans put him there for preaching the gospel.

    14:15-14:16

We're going to talk about that next week.

    14:16-14:17

    It's right in the text.

    14:18-14:26

But it was during this exile that John received these series of visions that we are going to study in Revelation.

    14:27-14:31

And I gotta tell you, Revelation to me is just completely mind-blowing.

    14:32-14:36

And I've thought so much over the years, like what it must have been like for John.

    14:37-14:39

How did he receive this information?

    14:40-14:52

Was it like, did, I've thought before, did Jesus like sit John down and have like this movie theater screen where John like watched all of these events on a screen?

    14:53-15:00

That's not really the case, because you're going to see in Revelation that John is very interactive with the things that are happening.

    15:01-15:02

    What was it like?

    15:03-15:13

Somehow, John was taken, he was translated through time and space to witness all of these events, the way the world is going to end.

    15:13-15:46

He witnessed these things in a way that I can't fully wrap my head around, but John gets to see what happens in heaven and what happens on the earth, and he's told what it and what how did this happen? Well believe it or not the answer is right here in verse 1. It says the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave him to show circle the word show that word show literally means miracle or sign so when you ask yourself how was John able to see all of these things in heaven and interact with angels and look it's it says right in the first verse that this This was a miracle.

    15:47-15:54

He miraculously was able to be a part of seeing how the end of the world comes about.

    15:56-16:25

We're going to see throughout Revelation many times John's just like, "I'm just recording what I see." There are some things that John witnesses that are just so incredible that by his own admission, he's like, "I'm just doing my best to try to describe these things as I'm watching them. So here's the premise. John saw how Jesus Christ is going to return in glory and close history. Secondly, let's look at the promise.

    16:26-16:31

Let's look at the promise verse 3. Revelation has a very special promise attached to it. Look at verse 3.

    16:31-16:45

"Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy and blessed are those who hear and who keep what is written in it for the time is near." That The word for near literally means imminent.

    16:45-16:47

Jesus could come back any moment.

    16:47-16:54

Do you realize Jesus could come back during this sermon or later this afternoon or in 20 years?

    16:54-16:56

I have no idea, but it's imminent.

    16:57-16:58

It says the time is near.

    16:59-17:09

Understand the word for time there, there's different words for time in the Greek and the word for time here isn't like the time on your watch or the dates on a calendar.

    17:09-17:12

The word time here literally is seasons.

    17:13-17:21

In other words, when John says the time is near, he's saying the next thing on God's schedule is the return of Jesus Christ.

    17:21-17:26

But here, a blessing is promised to people who will do three things.

    17:26-17:27

    Did you see it?

    17:28-17:29

    Three things.

    17:29-17:31

First of all, who reads aloud the words of this prophecy.

    17:33-17:34

We're not skipping a verse here, people.

    17:35-17:41

We're not going to be like, "Ah, that's controversial and some people might leave the church." Well, if that's your business.

    17:42-17:43

we're going to go through every verse.

    17:44-17:46

Why? Because there's a blessing reading this aloud.

    17:47-17:50

So not only blessed are those who read it, but blessed are those who hear.

    17:51-17:54

That means come ready to study this with me.

    17:55-17:56

And then finally, to those who keep.

    17:57-18:00

That's the only way you're going to know the power of God's Word, by the way.

    18:00-18:02

Not just Revelation, but all of God's Word.

    18:02-18:04

You've got to read it, you've got to hear it, and you've got to keep it.

    18:05-18:08

And this is a promise not from me, this is a promise from God.

    18:08-19:09

That if you want to see real supernatural life change, this year as we go through Revelation, okay, here's what you got to do. You got to read it, you got to hear it, and you need to get plugged into a small group where you can talk to people about how to apply the Word of God. You learn in deeper ways how to keep the Word of God. That's the promise attached to Revelation. Thirdly, the person. So we get the premise, we get the promise, let's talk about the person. Look down at verse 4. "John to the seven churches that are in Asia. John is not the person, by the way. He is supporting caste at best here. John to the seven churches that are in Asia, "Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come. And from the seven spirits who are before his throne." Stop right there for a second. What are the seven churches? Well, these are actually real churches. Today it's called Turkey. In John's day it was known as Asia Minor, but It's that geographical region.

    19:10-19:14

So this message was given to John to communicate to seven churches.

    19:16-19:20

And it's obvious for us that this is for all churches of all time, right?

    19:21-19:27

Kind of like the Bible has Thessalonians and Galatians and Ephesians.

    19:28-19:32

Those were written to specific churches, but they were written to us too, right?

    19:32-19:33

    That's how Revelation is.

    19:33-19:36

It was written to a bunch of churches, but also to us.

    19:37-19:42

We're going to talk about those churches a lot in the coming weeks because they're mentioned in Revelation 2 and 3.

    19:43-19:44

    The seven spirits.

    19:45-19:47

What are the seven spirits? Who are the seven spirits?

    19:48-19:52

Well, the seven spirits refers to the Holy Spirit.

    19:52-19:53

    But what's with the seven?

    19:53-19:56

Well, seven is a number of fullness or completion.

    19:57-19:59

And Revelation is full of sevens.

    20:00-20:02

But just jot this down. You can look this up later.

    20:02-20:10

Isaiah 11.2 talks about the Holy Spirit sevenfold in character and imputation of his attributes.

    20:10-20:18

One Holy Spirit, yes, there's one God, but he's revealed himself through these seven characteristics.

    20:19-20:21

Isaiah 11.2, we'll talk about that down the road perhaps.

    20:22-20:27

But John mentions, okay, we saw he mentions God the Father here, who is and who wasn't was to come.

    20:28-20:30

He mentions the Holy Spirit here, the seven spirits.

    20:30-20:32

So who do you think he's gonna mention next?

    20:32-20:32

    Any guesses?

    20:33-20:35

He mentions the Father, he mentions the Holy Spirit, who do you think's next?

    20:36-20:37

Go ahead, shout it out if you think you know.

    20:38-20:39

    Jesus, very good.

    20:39-20:40

    Have you read this?

    20:40-20:40

    Yes.

    20:41-20:42

    Look at verse five.

    20:43-20:45

Here's the person, here's the star right here.

    20:46-21:06

And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings on earth, to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

    21:07-21:29

So here's the star, Jesus Christ. And John tells us, gives us some titles for Jesus, some descriptive titles, and he also tells us some things that Jesus accomplished in relating to us. The titles, I'm going to go through these quickly. He says Jesus is the faithful witness. That word for witness in the Greek is where we get the word martyr.

    21:30-22:13

What is a martyr? It's somebody faithful to death. I will die for Jesus Christ. I will not stop short of that. That's a martyr. See Jesus Christ, His faithfulness took Him all the way to death. But He wasn't just a martyr. Because look at the next phrase, the firstborn of the dead. He's the firstborn of the dead, speaking to his resurrection. He's the greatest person to have ever resurrected because his resurrection guarantees and promises our resurrection. And I love this. It says, "And the ruler of the kings on earth." Who's in charge? Shout it out if you know. Who's in charge?

    22:14-22:25

Jesus is in charge. Spoiler alert. The world is about to acknowledge that. The world is about to acknowledge what God has already declared, and that is this.

    22:26-23:11

Jesus Christ is the ruler of everything. Okay? So whether it's President Trump, or Kim Jong-un, or Vladimir Putin, or that actress that became a princess this past year. What's her name? You know who I'm talking about. What's her name? Yeah, thank you. Megan Markle. Oh yeah, that one. Yes, that one. Guess what? Jesus rules over all of them. That's who he is. And if you think that's awesome, John mentions three things about Jesus relating to us. First of all, get this. He says to him, "Who loves us?" I don't know why Jesus would give us a thought.

    23:11-23:24

Right now, at your place, wherever you hang your hat, your home, your apartment, wherever, there's probably an ant crawling around somewhere on your property, and you wouldn't give that thing a second thought.

    23:24-23:27

Compared to Jesus Christ, we are so much less than that.

    23:28-23:31

But here's the awesome thing, He loves us.

    23:32-23:38

I don't know why Jesus would give us a thought or even tolerate us, but He loves us.

    23:39-23:41

That says nothing about who we are, but it says a lot about who Jesus is.

    23:42-23:44

Notice the second thing that Jesus has done for us.

    23:44-24:02

It says, "He has freed us from our sins by his blood." Because he loves us, he solved our biggest problem, which is sin, with the greatest cost, which is his blood, which gives us the greatest result, which is we are free.

    24:03-24:06

We are free people because of Jesus Christ.

    24:07-24:10

in the last phrase, three things about Jesus relating to us.

    24:10-24:15

He made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father.

    24:17-24:21

Man, every year in July, I spend a week working on the preaching calendar for the whole year.

    24:22-24:28

It's kind of an intense week for me because basically during that week, I am pre-preparing 40 some sermons.

    24:29-24:37

So it's round the clock work, study, and for the brain cells I have that still work, and it's very taxing.

    24:38-24:44

And it requires every bit of attention and focus that I can muster.

    24:44-24:54

You know, we're about to go into Revelation this year, and I'm going through and studying the whole book and pre-preparing and where are we going and holidays and all of the...

    24:54-25:00

So it's just an intense thing to put this calendar together.

    25:00-25:07

And I'm trying so hard to focus, but the one night I was like in the zone trying to get this thing hammered out.

    25:08-25:09

And I heard a knock on the door of my office.

    25:11-25:13

And I went over and opened it up and nobody was there.

    25:14-25:17

But I heard little footprints running around the corner.

    25:18-25:19

    Little footsteps rather.

    25:19-25:20

No, I didn't hear footprints, that would be weird.

    25:21-25:22

I heard footsteps running around the corner.

    25:22-25:24

    And I'm like, okay, whatever.

    25:24-25:26

I went and closed the door, went and sat back down.

    25:26-25:29

And you know, I'm working this thing and I hear knocking again.

    25:29-25:34

And I get up and I go over to the door and I open the door and I hear the footsteps again.

    25:34-25:36

but this time I hear a little giggling around the corner.

    25:37-25:40

Like, this happened like five times.

    25:40-25:42

I'm like, all right, game on.

    25:43-25:53

So my officers, you know, the door has a window and there's blinds, so you can kind of like peek out and see, so I just knelt down and I waited, like a jaguar.

    25:54-26:00

And I saw the little feet come to the door and I jumped up and opened the door.

    26:01-26:07

And it was three of the little kids from the jujitsu class, just like little kids, opened the door, they froze.

    26:08-26:12

And I just stared at them for what I hoped for them felt like an eternity.

    26:13-26:15

We just locked eyes, we just stared.

    26:15-26:27

And I said, "If I give you some candy, will you stop doing that?" And they said, "Yeah!" "Awesome! Come on in." So they took some candy and they stopped doing that.

    26:27-26:31

Now they come back once a night just for the candy.

    26:31-26:33

But here's my point in that story.

    26:33-26:38

Imagine if Jesus did for us just that.

    26:39-26:43

That Jesus was like, "Look, you people are annoying "and you're rebellious and you're sinful.

    26:44-26:44

    "Okay, you know what?

    26:45-26:48

"I'm going to cancel hell for you, that's it.

    26:49-26:53

"You don't have to go to, you believe in me, "you don't have to go to hell, that's it.

    26:53-27:01

"Now you leave me alone." If Jesus just did that for us, wouldn't we be eternally grateful that he canceled our wrath?

    27:01-27:04

We would be rejoicing if that was all that he did.

    27:04-27:06

But look at what he did on top of that.

    27:06-27:08

    He made us a kingdom.

    27:09-27:12

He made us priests to his God and father.

    27:13-27:16

He didn't so much more than shoo us away.

    27:16-27:21

It would be like if I took those kids into, and I said, "Hey, you know what?

    27:21-27:24

"Can I adopt you guys?" And I brought them home.

    27:25-27:28

And again, like, and then the police are like, "Why'd you do that?" But it's an illustration.

    27:29-27:35

It'd be like if I said, You know, I want to care for you and take care of you, and I want to give you everything that I have.

    27:36-27:38

That's what Jesus Christ has done for us.

    27:39-27:42

He made us a kingdom so we might reign with Him.

    27:42-27:44

He made us priests unto God.

    27:45-27:46

I don't know what else to say about that.

    27:48-28:04

Revelation is going to introduce us to a lot of people, to some angelic beings, to some demons, to some nations, to some leaders, to some evangelists, and to some rebels.

    28:04-28:08

But the star of revelation unquestionably is Jesus Christ.

    28:09-28:12

This whole thing circles around Him.

    28:13-28:15

    And finally, here's the preview.

    28:17-28:23

This is where John really gives the "hey, spoiler alert." The verses 7 and 8 are the preview.

    28:23-28:33

He says, "Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of Him.

    28:34-28:35

    Even so, amen.

    28:36-28:43

I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty." This is the preview.

    28:44-28:49

It says in verse 7, "He's coming on the clouds." That is a direct fulfillment to Daniel 7.13.

    28:49-28:56

Jesus talked about that Matthew 24 30 and really verse 8 is like the signature right?

    28:57-29:31

That's God's signature. I'm the Alpha and the Omega. God's like that's just a fancy way of saying I'm the beginning in the end I'm the first letter. I'm the last letter. I'm the A to Z. I want you to look at verse 7 Because he mentions two people groups. This is very significant. First of all, he says He says every I will see him, but then he breaks it down even those who pierced him even those who pierced him He's talking about the Jews and this is a direct reference to Zechariah 12 10 Zechariah 12 10 says the day is going to come When Israel will look upon?

    29:33-29:54

God whom they pierced and by the way, that was written before Jesus was on the earth doing his ministry That was written for Jesus was on the cross, but all of Israel is is going to realize it was our ancestors who put Jesus on the cross ultimately, and that's going to stir a massive revival in Israel.

    29:56-29:59

Then he references the tribes of the earth. Did you see that?

    29:59-30:07

He says, "And all the tribes of the earth will wail on account of Him." And that word for wail is wailing out of terror.

    30:08-30:09

    That's a horrified scream.

    30:10-30:19

In other words, Revelation we will see is going to give us the culmination of salvation and condemnation.

    30:19-30:39

In other words, you're either going to experience Jesus Christ as your Savior, which means you are rescued and freed, you're adopted as a child of God, you have the promise of heaven, You have the glorious eternity of joy in the presence of God to look forward to.

    30:40-30:45

Or, you're not going to experience Jesus as a Savior.

    30:46-30:49

The alternative is experiencing Jesus as a judge.

    30:50-31:00

Standing condemned, cast out of His presence, facing the forever torment of hell, where the fire is not quenched and the worm does not die.

    31:01-31:08

Because you refused to come to Jesus Christ to receive His gift of salvation.

    31:08-31:11

You refused. You thought it wasn't necessary.

    31:11-31:15

You thought you were good enough. You thought God had no place in your life.

    31:16-31:17

Revelation has a word for you.

    31:18-31:28

That's why to me, or really to everybody who's ever read it, at the same time, Revelation is the most comforting and the most terrifying book.

    31:28-31:30

    at the same time.

    31:31-31:42

If you know Jesus Christ, you're going to read Revelation and see this preview of eternal heaven and His presence, and you're going to feel unsurpassed joy.

    31:43-31:49

But if you don't know Christ, and you have no intention, then these words of Revelation should terrify you.

    31:50-31:51

    So, that's the preview.

    31:52-31:56

And I was thinking about this this week, you know, what if Revelation was a movie?

    31:57-32:02

What if I was going to be one of those voice actors to do the trailer for the movie?

    32:02-32:03

You know what I'm talking about?

    32:04-32:05

So we're going to give this a try. You ready?

    32:06-32:08

Okay, I'm going to try it anyways, even if you're not ready.

    32:08-32:08

    Alright?

    32:11-32:27

In a world ravaged by sin and groaning in misery, one man will step forward to right every wrong, to save every child and to punish every enemy.

    32:28-32:31

Things will not remain as they are.

    32:32-32:37

Every story has an end, and this is the end of God's story.

    32:38-32:45

This man who is God is about to destroy everything, so he can restore everything.

    32:46-32:51

This is Jesus Christ, and this is his Revelation.

    32:55-33:00

Father in heaven, what a taste you've given us!

    33:01-33:20

In these few short verses, we're already driven to, I guess like the song we sang, "standing in awe of you." Father, we want to be people in this church who read aloud the words of this book, who hear them, and who keep what is written in them.

    33:21-33:22

Only by your grace, we can be saved.

    33:22-33:26

grace and your power, we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion

Read Revelation 1:1-8

  1. Why do you think many people avoid Revelation (reading it, studying it)? How does Rev 1:3 speak to that?

  2. The Bible is clear we are saved by grace, not works (e.g., Ephesians 2:8-10). So what place does “keep(ing) what is written” have in the life of a Christ follower

  3. Why do you think John starts this writing as he has? Why do you think he gave a recap of the ministry of Jesus (Rev 1:5-6)?

  • 00:38-00:42

Our sermon series is Bible Basics.

    00:42-00:49

And we are looking at ten people from the Bible that you need to know, trying to get a panoramic view of the Bible.

    00:50-00:55

And with these people we have been studying, we've been learning some very important lessons.

    00:59-01:02

Abraham taught us what it means to have faith in the Lord.

    01:04-01:08

Joseph taught us what it means to trust in the Lord, even when things look horrible.

    01:10-01:13

Moses taught us what it means to be dependent on the Lord.

    01:15-01:19

Joshua taught us what it meant to have courage in the Lord.

    01:21-01:26

Saul taught us the consequences of being disobedient to the Lord.

    01:27-01:30

David showed us what it was like to worship the Lord.

    01:30-01:34

And Solomon showed us how to get wisdom from the Lord.

    01:36-01:42

Jesus taught us that He is the salvation of the Lord.

    01:43-01:52

And last week we saw Peter showed us what it looks like when we have messed up bad.

    01:53-01:56

Peter showed us restoration in the Lord.

    01:57-02:08

Well, this past Thursday I was on my way to pick up Cade from school when the gas tank was on E, pulled into sheet right there on 910 and 79.

    02:09-02:11

And every pump was full as usual.

    02:11-02:13

    That place is always hopping.

    02:13-02:16

And waited, found one open, pulled in.

    02:16-02:23

And as I'm standing there pumping gas, all of a sudden this silver Jeep Grand Cherokee rolls up right in front of me.

    02:23-02:26

And I was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, like really close.

    02:26-02:30

And this guy leans out the passenger window.

    02:30-02:33

He's like, oh, I was starting to roll up on you like that bro.

    02:34-02:43

I'm like, "It's all good?" He goes, "Hey, we get some overstock that we gotta unload.

    02:43-02:55

"Do you wanna buy a home theater?" Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, Rich, was I learned my lesson from buying the $500 worth of meat out of the back of that guy's truck.

    02:57-02:58

Hey, the Lord is growing me.

    03:00-03:27

So I'm like, I just smiled, I said, "Hey, no thank you." you didn't even hear the price yet bro! But here's the thing, even if it cost a nickel, I have zero use for a home theater. Right? I don't want to be rude to this guy, but I have zero use for a home theater. It could have been the greatest home theater system ever!

    03:30-03:33

But I have no use for a home theater.

    03:36-03:40

And I just said, you know what, man, I'm just not outfitted for it, but thank you.

    03:40-03:48

And he just drove over and started trying to sell home theaters to the tow truck driver in the pump beside me.

    03:50-03:59

But you know, as he left, I'm standing there pumping gas, and I was thinking to myself, I was thinking, "Alex, how would you like to have that job?

    04:00-04:10

"Could you imagine showing up to work "and you're punching in and your boss is like, "'All right, step into my office.' "Like, 'Okay, what do you got for me today, chief?'

    04:10-04:11

    (laughs)

    04:12-04:19

"'I need you to get onto the gas station "'and sell some home theaters.' "I'm like, 'That sounds like a terrible job.

    04:20-04:31

"'A terrible job.' "Like, just going pump to pump to pump, asking complete strangers if they want to buy a home theater.

    04:31-04:32

And then I was thinking about it.

    04:32-04:34

I'm like, what's the demographic there?

    04:34-04:40

Like, how many people at a gas station buy a home theater on impulse, right?

    04:41-04:47

I mean, I can understand buying like a pack of gum or a Milky Way Midnight or a bottle of Coke Zero or whatever on impulse.

    04:48-04:52

But I just can't imagine being at the pump and being like, you know what?

    04:52-04:53

I haven't even thought about a home theater.

    04:53-04:59

that you're offering me one, sure, how much? I just don't...

    04:59-05:15

Then I got thinking a little more about this, and you're like, "Man, you thought about this a lot more than maybe you should have." And I thought, you know, that's something great about my job, and I would say Harvest Bible Chapel, that's something great about our job, is we have something that everybody needs. Right?

    05:16-05:36

We have something that everybody needs, literally everyone, whether you're young or old, whether you're a man or a woman, whether you're black or white, whether you're rich or poor, no matter where you've been, no matter what you've done, we have something that we are offering in this establishment that literally everybody needs.

    05:39-05:43

And the last guy on our list, the guy we're looking at today, has a man named Paul.

    05:44-05:46

And this guy totally got it.

    05:48-05:51

the greatest missionary of all time.

    05:52-06:00

We spent three years in the book of Acts, and a huge chunk of that time was talking about this man.

    06:01-06:09

He had the message, he had a plan, but there was something that made Paul effective.

    06:11-06:24

On top of just having the message, which is absolutely essential, on top of having a plan, which is crucial, He had something else that made him so effective that without this thing, nothing happens.

    06:24-06:30

And if we don't have this thing here at Harvest Bible Chapel, nothing is going to happen.

    06:30-06:32

And that thing is called zeal.

    06:35-06:36

    What is zeal?

    06:36-06:37

    What is that?

    06:38-06:48

Well the definition is it's great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective.

    06:50-06:54

Great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective.

    06:55-07:01

I would suggest to you in our mission of making disciples, I would suggest to you there is no greater cause.

    07:03-07:17

We're doing, you realize, the thing that we're doing, the work that we're doing, if the Bible's true and I believe it is, the work that we're doing here changes lives for eternity.

    07:19-07:29

And if zeal is greater energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective, then I would say there should be no greater energy or enthusiasm for what we are doing here.

    07:32-07:34

Because what we are doing here matters more than anything.

    07:36-07:45

Romans 12, 11, Paul says, "Do not be slothful and zeal." And he was a guy who lived it.

    07:46-07:48

Look what he said in Romans chapter 9.

    07:48-07:51

He said, "I'm speaking the truth in Christ.

    07:51-07:51

    I'm not lying.

    07:51-07:58

My conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

    08:00-08:15

Or I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh." See, Paul was Jewish, and many Jews at this time had rejected Jesus Christ as Messiah, and it grieved Paul so much.

    08:16-08:26

He said, "You know, I'd be willing to go to hell if it meant they would receive Jesus Christ." Church, that's zeal.

    08:28-08:33

And we know such a thing is not possible, transferring your salvation, that's not possible.

    08:34-08:37

But what I want you to see is the heart behind that.

    08:38-08:43

He says, "That's how much I care about these people." Moses had that going on too.

    08:44-08:48

Remember back in Exodus 32, the whole golden calf incident?

    08:49-08:49

    Remember that story?

    08:50-09:07

Moses is up on a mountain talking to God and Israel's like, "Hey, let's make a God." They craft this calf out of the gold, and Moses comes down and busts it up and makes them drink it, and it's just a horrible scene.

    09:08-09:11

But I want you to see Exodus 32.32, what Moses prays to God.

    09:11-09:25

He says, "But now if you will forgive their sin, but if not, please blot me out of your book that you have written." Just like Paul, Moses was like, God, if you have to condemn somebody, condemn me.

    09:26-09:27

    But save your people.

    09:28-09:29

    And church, that's zeal.

    09:29-09:32

That is compassion for lost people.

    09:32-09:38

Even, and Paul and Moses both knew this well, very wicked lost people.

    09:40-09:43

But can you imagine giving up your salvation for somebody else?

    09:43-09:45

That's not like donating a kidney, right?

    09:47-09:53

Like that's great enough to do something like that, to be willing to go to hell on behalf of someone else.

    09:56-10:07

I look at Paul and I look at Moses and I think, "How much does my heart break for lost people?" I think you have to ask yourself that.

    10:07-10:09

How much does your heart break for lost people?

    10:09-10:10

    You know lost people.

    10:10-10:15

They're in your family and you're working with them and they live across the street from you.

    10:17-10:19

But yeah, the last people I know are nasty.

    10:19-10:23

The people that Paul and Moses dealt with were nasty people.

    10:26-10:30

But today we're looking at one of the richest passages in the Bible.

    10:30-10:32

This is one of my favorite passages in the entire Bible.

    10:34-10:35

    So rich in theology.

    10:37-10:43

But today what I want us to look at is the zeal that's behind this passage.

    10:43-11:43

church when you really get the theology, when you really understand spiritually what is being taught in this passage, you get fired up. You get the zeal to share the good news of Jesus Christ. So in your outline today I want you to jot some things down. We're gonna come alongside the Apostle Paul here, why I am fired up to share Christ. Why I am fired up to share Christ. First of all, number one, I am controlled by Jesus' love. I am controlled by Jesus' love. Look at verse 14. Paul writes, "For the love of Christ controls us." Stop right there. The love of Christ controls us. Understand This is such a foundational statement to everything that follows.

    11:44-11:44

We've got to make this clear.

    11:45-11:50

Paul is saying we are motivated not by our love for him.

    11:50-11:54

He's not saying, "I love Jesus so much that this is what I do." That's not what he's saying.

    11:55-12:13

He's saying, "I'm motivated by the love that Jesus has for me." He says, "The love of Christ controls us." That word control literally means pressure causing action.

    12:15-12:24

In other words, with this bottle of water, we can make the action of a fountain coming out of the top.

    12:24-12:28

And what is the way that happens?

    12:29-12:30

    Watch yourself.

    12:34-12:35

I didn't mean it to shoot that way.

    12:36-12:36

    [LAUGHTER]

    12:37-12:39

I thought it was going to go up.

    12:39-12:43

But do you see how the pressure causes the action?

    12:44-12:47

Please tell me you saw that, because otherwise--

    12:48-12:48

    [LAUGHTER]

    12:49-12:52

I just-- we don't do it that way, Alex.

    12:52-12:53

    [LAUGHTER]

    12:54-12:59

Please tell me you understand the illustration, because otherwise I'm going to take a tail kicking for nothing.

    13:01-13:02

Did you guys see it over here?

    13:03-13:09

    Look, pressure causes action.

    13:10-13:11

Do you need paper towels or anything?

    13:12-13:12

    We good?

    13:12-13:12

    All right.

    13:13-13:13

    All right.

    13:14-13:30

And what Paul is saying here is Jesus Christ, I put the cap on, Jesus Christ is like this pressure on me that when it comes to sharing the love of Christ, it just like shoots out of me all the time and I can't help it.

    13:30-13:32

Like, can you shut up about Jesus for a second?

    13:33-13:39

He's like, I certainly cannot because the love of Christ has just, it's got me.

    13:39-13:42

And it's this pressure that's on me and I can't let it go.

    13:45-13:57

And as soon as we talk about witnessing evangelism, mission work, local outreach, I know, as soon as we talk about that, there's gonna be somebody that's like, oh, here comes the sales pitch.

    13:57-13:59

    Here comes the guilt trip.

    14:00-14:10

to witness, "He's going to guilt me into evangelizing, and I'm not going to do that at all today." Because here's the thing when it comes to evangelism.

    14:13-14:15

The love of Christ controls us.

    14:16-14:20

And when you've got the love of Christ, you can't help it.

    14:22-14:28

It's like telling a Pittsburgh Penguins fan to get excited that the season is starting.

    14:28-14:30

Is such a thing necessary, Corinne?

    14:30-14:30

    No.

    14:32-14:38

It's like telling a bride-to-be to think about her wedding.

    14:38-14:41

Hey, hey, could you spend some time thinking about your wedding?

    14:41-14:43

Is such a thing necessary, Kaylee?

    14:43-14:44

    No.

    14:46-14:51

It's like telling a mom of a special needs child to be protective of that child.

    14:52-14:53

    Is such a thing necessary?

    14:55-15:03

You see, that's what it's like trying to convince someone who knows Jesus' love to share Him.

    15:03-15:20

And if you don't know the power that love has to motivate you to the point that it feels like it's controlling you, if you don't know what that kind of love is like, then you haven't met the right person yet.

    15:23-15:24

And you certainly haven't met Jesus.

    15:26-15:28

Because nothing moves a person like love.

    15:28-15:29

    Nothing.

    15:31-15:33

How does His love control us exactly?

    15:36-15:38

Well look at verse 14, he explains it.

    15:39-15:49

"The love of Christ controls us because we have concluded this, that one has died for all, therefore all have died.

    15:52-16:04

He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who for their sake died and was raised." How does His love control us?

    16:04-16:06

He says, "Because we've concluded this.

    16:06-16:12

Yes, we are alive in Christ, but yes, those who truly live in the Spirit live by this truth.

    16:12-17:01

Being alive in Christ means being dead to myself." See, we're going to have baptisms here next week, and that's the whole thing behind the picture. That's why we don't do it this way Alex. That's the whole point of this picture is when you're going under the water you're saying I am dead and when you come up out of the water you're saying I'm identifying with the new life in Jesus Christ. That's what he's talking about in this passage. I don't live for me anymore. You know once upon a time I had all kinds of goals and dreams and And Christ came into my life and saved me and changed me and all the stuff that I had planned, but that ship really sailed.

    17:04-17:10

My life belongs to Jesus, and because it belongs to Jesus, His mission is what matters, and that's what controls me.

    17:11-17:12

    You see, it's not obligation.

    17:13-17:15

    I'm not saved by evangelism.

    17:18-17:20

It's not like Jesus has a quota for me.

    17:22-17:24

    I'm saved by His grace.

    17:24-17:30

I'm saved because I experienced His awesome love and I received that by faith.

    17:30-17:37

And it's that love that saves lost people like me that I just can't keep it to myself.

    17:40-17:46

And I know many of you know this, but being a preacher was the absolute last thing I ever wanted to do.

    17:46-17:49

Like, no! I told God no!

    17:49-17:52

And I just can't seem to shut up about Him!

    17:54-17:56

    Because of His love!

    17:58-18:02

So Harvest Bible Chapel, we ain't selling home theaters out of the back of a Jeep.

    18:04-18:09

We're reaching lost people because we are controlled by Jesus' love.

    18:10-18:15

As I heard one person put it, he says, "You know, I'm just a nobody that's telling everybody about somebody that can save anybody.

    18:16-18:17

Controlled by the love of Jesus.

    18:19-18:22

Number two, why I'm fired up to share Christ?

    18:22-18:24

Because I see people as spiritual beings.

    18:25-18:28

I see people as spiritual beings.

    18:29-18:30

    Look at verse 16.

    18:32-18:41

He says, "From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh." Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.

    18:42-18:46

He's saying we stop seeing people as external.

    18:49-18:49

    Just seeing the outside.

    18:50-18:52

Paul's like, you know, we used to do this to Jesus, right?

    18:53-18:55

We only looked at him from an external standpoint.

    18:55-19:04

We looked at Jesus and we're like, that Jewish man is a radical teacher and a troublemaker.

    19:04-19:08

And he says, I thought Jesus was just some guy.

    19:09-19:15

And then my eyes were open and I'm like, I don't regard Christ according to the flesh anymore.

    19:16-19:18

And then when you do that, you can't regard people.

    19:20-19:27

See Paul says, "I see people differently." And people controlled by the love of Christ see people differently.

    19:29-19:41

See you don't walk around and look at people and think, "Well, there's a worthless teenager." Or, "There's an annoying kid." "There's a stupid politician." there's a hopeless addict.

    19:43-19:44

    You see people as eternal.

    19:46-20:00

You look at people and you think, "That person is going to spend eternity somewhere." And I have a message that God is going to use for that person to...

    20:01-20:02

    to what?

    20:03-20:05

To make that person religious? No.

    20:06-20:09

To make that person moral? No.

    20:09-20:10

    Now look at verse 17.

    20:11-20:14

"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.

    20:15-20:17

    The old has passed away.

    20:17-20:20

Behold, the new has come." New creation.

    20:21-20:25

Jesus didn't come into the world to turn bad people into good people.

    20:25-20:27

And I've thought that my whole life.

    20:27-20:28

    That's what Jesus does.

    20:28-20:29

He turns bad people to good people.

    20:29-20:31

And that's not what He does.

    20:31-20:33

He turns dead people into alive people.

    20:34-20:36

And more on that in a minute.

    20:39-20:41

Church, you've got to get this. People are spiritual beings.

    20:42-20:44

Because of that, they're eternal beings.

    20:46-20:48

And that fires me up to share Christ with people.

    20:50-20:51

    Because they're spending eternity somewhere.

    20:54-20:55

Mike, can you bring me a chair up here, please?

    20:56-21:02

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we encourage you to look for red apples.

    21:03-21:04

    What are red apples?

    21:05-21:06

    Thanks, Mike.

    21:07-21:14

"Apples" refers to people who are ripe to the gospel.

    21:16-21:22

That you need to learn to look for people who are ripe for the gospel.

    21:24-21:29

And I want you to listen very closely because it took me a very long time to learn this.

    21:30-21:32

A very long time to learn this.

    21:34-21:35

and persuaded of better things for you.

    21:38-21:40

This is what it took me so long to learn.

    21:41-21:43

Some people just aren't ready to hear the gospel.

    21:45-21:47

    They just aren't ready.

    21:50-21:53

Like, "Well, how did you learn that lesson?" I can tell you the exact day I learned that lesson.

    21:55-22:03

At my old church, I stopped to get gas at the Sunoco, and you're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, Servant has a lot of gas station stories.

    22:06-22:08

I got like four more before we're done today.

    22:11-22:21

But I went in to pay and the cashier, he said, I don't even remember how we even got into this.

    22:22-22:26

He said, I need you to help me buy Christmas presents for my grandkids.

    22:28-22:31

And I'm like, is this some kind of promotion that they're offering at A+?

    22:31-22:36

Like, fill your tank, buy presents for somebody's grandkids.

    22:36-22:37

Like, do I get a punch card for that?

    22:37-22:44

Or it was, can you just agree with me that that's a really weird thing for the cashier at the gas station to say?

    22:44-22:47

Okay, some of you are looking at me like, that's how they do it.

    22:49-22:50

    What?

    22:51-22:55

So I'm thinking, all right, gospel opportunity.

    22:56-23:01

I'm like, yeah, you come to my office and we'll give you some gift cards or whatever.

    23:01-23:17

and I'd like to talk to you about Jesus Christ." And he's like, "Okay." So he comes to our office and we're sitting in the conference room and I'm sitting there and I am giving him the gospel with like both barrels.

    23:18-23:22

It was the greatest gospel presentation I ever gave in my life.

    23:22-23:40

I mean, you talk about thorough and passionate and I was laying it out The entire time that I was giving this man the gospel, this was his body language, and I am by no means exaggerating this.

    23:40-23:44

This is what he was doing while I was sharing the gospel with him.

    23:45-23:46

    (exhaling)

    23:47-23:48

    (inhaling)

    23:49-23:50

    (exhaling)

    23:50-23:52

    Didn't even look at me.

    23:53-23:53

    (exhaling)

    23:55-23:56

    (exhaling)

    23:57-23:58

    (exhaling)

    24:00-24:07

And then I got to the part of death on the cross, and he's just like, "How much longer?

    24:08-24:20

How much longer is this?" I'm like, "I'm almost done, I'm almost to the boat!" He's like, "All right." So I rolled the gospel out to him, hardcore.

    24:21-24:27

And he, of course at this point, Billy Graham in me is looking for a response.

    24:27-24:30

And he's like, "Yeah, I got to go to work now.

    24:30-24:41

Can I get those gift cards?" I gave him his gift cards, and I was just like, "What the heck happened there?" I mean, I had the right message, and I was fired up for it.

    24:43-24:48

And the next time I saw him was the following November.

    24:49-24:55

He said, "Hey, can you help me get presents for my grandkids for Christmas?" You want to come and hear the gospel?

    24:57-24:59

    That guy taught me something.

    25:00-25:04

He taught me that some people just aren't ready to hear the gospel.

    25:04-25:05

    Now, don't misunderstand me.

    25:05-25:09

Yes, yes, yes, we share with anyone.

    25:09-25:15

Yes, church, we take every opportunity the Lord gives us.

    25:16-25:17

    Yes, for sure.

    25:20-25:23

But in Red Apple evangelism, here's what I want to encourage you towards.

    25:23-25:26

Look for people who are hurting.

    25:27-25:31

Look for people who are experiencing the emptiness of life.

    25:31-25:43

Look for people who are saying, "My thing ain't working!" Look for people who are looking for the very thing that you know Jesus Christ offers.

    25:45-25:46

    And here's the good news.

    25:47-25:48

There's no shortage of those people.

    25:49-25:50

    They're everywhere.

    25:51-25:52

    Those people are everywhere.

    25:52-25:53

You're related to some of them.

    25:54-25:55

You work with some of them.

    25:55-25:56

Some of them live in your neighborhood.

    25:56-25:58

Look for them. Invite them to church.

    25:59-25:59

    Invite them to small groups.

    26:00-26:07

Invite them to the life transformation, the new creation that Jesus Christ gives people who recognize they need it.

    26:10-26:11

So why am I fired up to share Christ?

    26:11-26:14

Well, I'm controlled by Jesus' love.

    26:14-26:16

I see people as spiritual beings.

    26:17-26:18

Look for the red apples, people.

    26:20-26:26

    3) I represent God the people. I represent God the people.

    26:27-26:29

    Go to verses 18-20.

    26:29-26:54

"All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to Himself, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation." That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

    26:55-26:59

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us.

    27:00-27:07

We implore you, or we beg you, or we urge you.

    27:07-27:08

    Do you see the zeal?

    27:09-27:15

We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

    27:17-27:33

So, God in heaven wants to broadcast the news of the gospel to all the earth, to all of these lost and hurting people that need to know His love, and the way God chooses to broadcast the message is through you.

    27:35-27:38

    That is incredible!

    27:39-27:41

But that's how God would choose to work.

    27:43-27:46

That's why verse 20 says that we are ambassadors for Christ.

    27:46-27:47

You know what an ambassador is?

    27:48-27:55

An ambassador is somebody that goes to another country and represents their own king to that country.

    27:58-28:02

That ambassador doesn't go to another country for a personal agenda.

    28:03-28:12

Like here's what I was thinking, that ambassador is not there to change their culture to say I'm here to whip you in shape to be...

    28:12-28:16

No, that ambassador is there to communicate a message on the king's behalf.

    28:17-28:22

And church, really, at the end of the day, that's our job too, is to represent the king to another culture.

    28:24-28:25

Represent the king in another culture.

    28:26-28:26

    That's what we do.

    28:28-29:06

I had a friend one time who, more like co-worker, "Did you meet him at a gas station, Pastor Jeff?" "No, I didn't." Okay, but I had this friend just through sports, the one time we were getting ready for the event, he came up to me and we were talking and he just very sincerely, he said, "You know what, man?" He goes, "You are Jesus to me." And immediately I was like trying to downplay that, like, no, no, no, no, no, I'm just, I wanna, I like to talk about Jesus and share Jesus and I'm trying to, I'm really trying to downplay that whole thing, but...

    29:08-29:11

But there's a real sense in which that's true.

    29:13-29:14

And I don't just mean of me.

    29:15-29:19

I mean biblically of everyone who follows Jesus Christ.

    29:21-29:38

He said, "You're Jesus to me." And I say to you, "You name the name of Christ, you claim He's your Lord and Savior, well then listen, you're Jesus to somebody." In your homes, dad, you're Jesus to your kids.

    29:40-29:47

At the workplace, you work with a bunch of lost, selfish people, anybody?

    29:50-29:51

    You're Jesus to them.

    29:54-29:59

And they might not verbalize it like this guy did to me, but it's true.

    29:59-30:01

    You represent Jesus to people.

    30:02-30:06

For some people, you are the first impression that they have of Jesus Christ.

    30:07-30:09

    What is Christianity about?

    30:09-30:10

    What does the Bible teach?

    30:11-30:13

Who is this Jesus that they follow?

    30:13-30:23

They're evaluating all of that by the way that you act at work, the way you act in your home, the way you act in your community.

    30:24-30:29

Part of that, of course, means getting the message right, obviously.

    30:29-30:30

You gotta get the message right.

    30:31-30:32

    And what's the message?

    30:32-30:35

You know, a lot of times in evangelism, this is the message.

    30:35-30:38

It's like, do you want to have meaning in your life?

    30:40-30:42

Do you want to have your best life now?

    30:44-30:47

Or do you want to know purpose in your life?

    30:49-30:51

Or would you like to be happy?

    30:52-30:56

A lot of times that's how evangelism is presented.

    30:56-30:59

And the gospel is about none of those things.

    31:02-31:03

    But what's the gospel about?

    31:05-31:16

Well, look, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but in those verses that we just read, 18 through 20, Paul said the same thing under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

    31:16-31:18

He said the same thing five times, what the gospel's about.

    31:19-31:19

    Did you catch it?

    31:20-31:20

    Five times.

    31:22-31:23

One word begins with an R.

    31:26-31:26

    Reconciliation.

    31:27-31:29

That's what the gospel is about, okay?

    31:31-31:40

You come to know Jesus, yes, you're going to experience joy and happiness, and yes, you're going to understand meaning and purpose and all of that, but those are leaves on the tree.

    31:41-31:49

The root, the foundation, the very essence of the gospel is found in the word reconciliation.

    31:50-31:51

    That's the gospel.

    31:52-31:57

Like, "Well, that reconciliation, that sounds like there's some hostility going on." There is!

    31:59-32:00

    That's the problem.

    32:01-32:03

We have sinned against the Holy God.

    32:04-32:12

Every nasty thought, every rotten attitude, every harsh word, every time you avoid doing the thing that you know you should do.

    32:13-32:15

It's like spitting in God's face.

    32:16-32:26

It's like saying, "You're not God, I'm God!" You've sinned against Him, but He provided the means of reconciliation.

    32:28-32:47

See that's why verse 19, you better have this underlined in your Bible, where He says, "In Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself." Here's the thing, look, "Not counting their trespasses against them." Not counting their trespasses against them.

    32:49-32:55

See everyone knows deep down, everyone knows that they are flawed people.

    32:56-32:58

Everyone knows they're heading to death.

    32:58-33:04

And everyone again verbalizing or not is wondering what happens when I stand before God?

    33:04-33:13

What happens when the day comes that I have to answer for all of the wicked things that I've done and all the mean things that I've said?

    33:13-33:22

What's going to happen on that day when I have to stand before God and answer for my nastiness?

    33:24-33:25

Well, see, here's the good news.

    33:25-33:27

I get to represent God now.

    33:29-34:09

And in representing God, I get to say to that person, "What if I told you," sounds like an infomercial now, "What if I told you there's a way that God will not hold your trespasses against you. Doesn't that sound like good news? There's a way that God will not hold your trespasses against you. How could that possibly be? And that takes us to our last point. I have a life changing message. Look at verse 21. I've referenced this verse probably more than any other verse in the Bible over the last 20 some years or whatever because Because this verse is the gospel.

    34:11-34:30

He says, "For our sake, He made him to be sin, who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." See the apparent dilemma that we see that God has to face is that justice has to be satisfied, right?

    34:30-34:31

    Justice has to be satisfied.

    34:32-34:32

    We know that.

    34:33-34:34

    There has to be justice.

    34:36-34:37

We understand that even on an earthly level.

    34:39-34:46

Imagine a man goes to court and he's been accused of violent murder.

    34:47-34:49

This man goes to court and he says, "You know what, Your Honor?

    34:51-34:52

    I did it.

    34:53-34:53

    I confess.

    34:53-34:56

I did it and I'm sorry.

    34:58-35:03

Can I go?" And the judge is like, "Sure.

    35:04-35:10

Go ahead." What would happen to that judge? Tell me what would happen to that judge?

    35:12-35:33

Do you think he's going to be judged very much longer? He's not upholding the law, right? On a personal whim he decides to let a confessing murderer walk out? He's not going to be serving for long. Somebody's going to make sure of that.

    35:33-35:36

What's the problem? The problem is there's no justice.

    35:37-35:40

But see that's the most beautiful thing about the gospel.

    35:42-35:48

So in the gospel, God in his love provided justice.

    35:49-36:02

That's why verse 21 says, "God made Jesus to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." You see there's a swap that takes place.

    36:02-36:09

The Bible says that when Jesus was on the cross, He took all of your and my sin on Himself.

    36:11-36:14

And in exchange, He gave us the very righteousness of God.

    36:16-36:23

In other words, when Jesus was on the cross, God treated Jesus as if Jesus was guilty.

    36:25-36:25

    Though He was not.

    36:27-36:28

    Jesus never committed one sin.

    36:29-36:32

But God treated him as if he was guilty of all of the sin.

    36:34-36:40

And instead, God treats us as if we live Jesus' life.

    36:40-36:46

We are treated as if we are righteous, though we are not.

    36:48-36:50

    That's a life-changing message, people.

    36:51-36:53

    That is a life-changing message.

    36:53-36:56

I'm not shy about sharing that. Are you kidding me?

    36:57-36:58

Hey, it doesn't matter what you've done.

    36:58-37:00

and God loves you and wants to forgive you.

    37:00-37:02

And he made the way that that can happen.

    37:04-37:12

So when I think of the love of Christ, who took our sin on himself so he could give us his righteousness, I have no problem telling people of such an awesome God.

    37:13-37:23

And when I think of Harvest Bible Chapel, a place where Christ is worshiped and people are loved and his word is taught, I have no problem inviting people to check this place out.

    37:26-37:29

I don't have a duty to share Christ.

    37:30-37:32

    I have a delight.

    37:33-37:35

No, that's not the word either.

    37:36-37:40

I have a zeal to share Christ.

    37:41-37:42

    Let's pray.

    37:43-37:52

Father in Heaven, I just simply pray today that we would grow in the understanding of Your love.

    37:54-38:03

I realize that I can't guilt or motivate or give some kind of a sales pitch to get people to be evangelists.

    38:03-38:08

The only thing that controls us is the love of Christ.

    38:09-38:13

Father, help us to grow in our understanding of that.

    38:13-38:31

And when we truly understand what Jesus has done, when we understand who He is, when we understand what He saved us from, When we see people as eternal beings who are heading to hell, apart from the intervention of Christ, like Paul, it fires us up.

    38:33-38:39

So Father, I pray that as we leave here, You'd give us eyes to see the world as a mission field.

    38:41-38:51

We see the lost for what they are, but Father, I pray that we would see ourselves for what Your Word says we are as well.

    38:53-38:58

We are ambassadors of Christ. We are Your spokespeople.

    38:58-39:02

We represent You, God, to a lost and dying world.

    39:04-39:07

Father, Your Word tells us You are pleading with the world to come back to You.

    39:09-39:11

    And You're pleading through us.

    39:13-39:20

Let us not be slothful and zeal. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read 2 Corinthians 5:14-21

1 - On a scale of 1-10, rate your zeal for Christ (1 = no zeal, 10 = on fire sharing Christ with everyone). How can you score a higher rating?

2 - How do you recognize a “red apple”? How can you start a conversation with them about Jesus Christ?

3 - Explain the Gospel using 2 Cor 5:21. Could you explain that to someone who needs to hear it?

BREAKOUT

Pray for: zeal, ability to spot “red apples”, and boldness to share Christ!

  • 00:41-00:43

Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word.

    00:44-00:47

We thank You for the glorious truth that You have revealed to us in Your Word.

    00:47-00:52

And today, I just ask again, Father, for all of us, that You would open our hearts.

    00:52-00:58

It's so easy for us to apply a message or apply a word to somebody else.

    00:59-01:01

Help us today, Father, to apply it to ourselves.

    01:03-01:12

In Jesus' name we pray, that all of God's people said, "Amen." Open up your Bibles with me please to the Gospel of John.

    01:13-01:14

We're going to be in chapter 21.

    01:16-01:20

While you're turning there, we are in a sermon series right now called Bible Basics.

    01:20-01:28

We're looking at the story of the Bible as a whole, and along the way we're meeting some people and we're learning some lessons.

    01:30-01:33

And sorry if you missed last week, but last week was the main event.

    01:34-01:36

Because last week we talked about Jesus Christ.

    01:37-01:45

God in the flesh who came and died on the cross for your sins, who rose from the dead so that you might have eternal life.

    01:45-01:54

Well, during Jesus' three years of earthly ministry, He chose twelve men that He constantly was pouring into.

    01:54-02:00

And today, we're going to be talking about probably the most famous disciple of Jesus.

    02:00-02:02

We're going to be talking about Peter.

    02:02-02:10

Peter was a fisherman that was called by Jesus to be a disciple, and Peter eventually went on to become a leader.

    02:11-02:15

And I'm going to give you a bit of an on-ramp here before we look at...

    02:15-02:17

We're going to start in verse 15, but I want to give you an on-ramp to this.

    02:18-02:27

In John chapter 21, this is after Jesus resurrected, and He had already told the disciples to go wait in Galilee on the mountain.

    02:27-02:29

That was in Matthew chapter 28 and verse 16.

    02:30-02:46

So the disciples are there waiting for Jesus and Peter, John tells us, turns to the guys and like a lot of men would say, Peter says, "I'm going fishing." And the others, there were at least six other guys with him, they joined him.

    02:46-02:59

Now, okay, wait on the mountain and Peter's like, "We're going fishing," or, "I'm going fishing and you can join if you want." I was studying this this week and there were a lot of different ideas of why Peter went fishing.

    02:59-03:02

Some people thought, "Well, he just wanted to earn some money," right?

    03:03-03:12

Or some people said, "He was just killing time." And we're going to see here in the passage that I don't think either of those are true.

    03:12-03:16

I think Peter thought he was done following Jesus in ministry.

    03:18-03:21

Because, do you remember the account when Jesus was arrested?

    03:21-03:28

Do you remember Peter at the time denied that he even knew Jesus three times?

    03:29-03:32

Peter pretended like he had no idea who Jesus was.

    03:32-04:22

"I don't know him." Which is something that Peter swore he would never do, even though Jesus said, "This is exactly how it's going to go down." Remember Jesus said, "Peter, before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me." Okay, so in John chapter 21, the disciples are out fishing and they're not catching anything and Jesus appears on the shore and he provides For them a miraculous catch of fish. He's like throw it on the right side They threw it on the right side and they brought in a massive catch Remember that because that's gonna be important here in a second and at first they didn't recognize them and then John was like hey That's the Lord and Peter jumped off the boat and he swims and everybody joins them and they're all on shore and they saw that Jesus made them breakfast, which was fish and bread.

    04:22-04:24

Anybody have fish and bread for breakfast this morning?

    04:25-04:26

Well, that's the breakfast that Jesus made.

    04:27-04:29

They're not gonna tell you to try that, I guess.

    04:29-04:34

Okay, so you have to see now, they're on the beach and Jesus made them breakfast.

    04:34-04:38

And you know right here what Peter's thinking about.

    04:39-04:42

The unresolved elephant in the room.

    04:43-04:45

    Lord, I failed.

    04:46-04:46

    Hugely.

    04:48-04:49

    Inexcusably.

    04:50-04:54

    I really, royally messed up.

    04:55-05:00

I mean, I was supposed to be your number one guy.

    05:00-05:07

And when it all got hard, I just, I pretended like I didn't even know who you were.

    05:07-05:11

    I'm like, I just, I completely failed.

    05:12-05:14

I knew better and I failed.

    05:16-05:21

Is there anybody here this morning that can identify with Peter?

    05:22-05:24

Is there anybody here that can say, you know what?

    05:25-05:31

I have messed up so badly and I have no excuse.

    05:32-05:33

    I'm such a failure.

    05:35-05:40

Or maybe it's not that you did one thing very badly, maybe you just keep messing up repeatedly.

    05:41-05:42

What the heck's the matter with me?

    05:42-05:44

    I'm such a spiritual loser.

    05:44-05:46

Why can't I get it together?

    05:46-05:48

I know better and I do it anyways.

    05:49-05:50

    I'm a failure.

    05:50-05:52

    I'm a spiritual failure.

    05:53-06:03

And you know, church, sometimes our sin and our failure just crushes us and it's right in our face and we carry the guilt around and we start to think, why am I so weak?

    06:03-06:04

    What's the matter with me?

    06:05-06:07

God surely has to be done with me.

    06:07-06:09

God surely has to be done.

    06:09-06:15

Surely God's not going to do anything in my life because He sees what a terrible screw-up I am, all the time.

    06:16-06:17

Has anybody ever felt like that?

    06:18-06:20

You don't have to raise your hands.

    06:21-06:24

Please don't, but is there anybody that feels like that today?

    06:25-06:28

Somebody might be sitting here like, "Dude, I don't even know why I'm here.

    06:29-06:30

    I am a royal screw-up.

    06:31-06:35

God's wasting His time with me." What do we do about that?

    06:36-06:46

What do we do when we're like Peter, we're just so paralyzed by our guilt that we're ready to throw in the spiritual towel and we're just going to go back to fishing or whatever is familiar?

    06:47-06:54

Because obviously we stink at following Jesus and we don't know what we were thinking and Jesus must be so disappointed in me.

    06:55-06:56

I think we've all felt like that.

    06:57-06:59

Jesus must be so disappointed in me.

    07:01-07:04

Well today we're going to talk about the reason Jesus showed up on that beach.

    07:06-07:07

Wasn't to have fish and bread.

    07:08-07:10

That was like a secondary thing going on here.

    07:10-07:13

The reason Jesus showed up was to restore Peter.

    07:15-07:19

And as we talk about being restored, I want you to embrace three foundational truths.

    07:19-07:21

Now these aren't like the three things on your outline.

    07:21-07:26

These are like the three things you need to embrace before we can even get to the stuff on your outline.

    07:27-07:31

But you need to embrace three foundational truths as we talk about restoration.

    07:32-07:35

Quickly, number one, Jesus knew you were going to fail before you did.

    07:36-07:37

Did you royally mess things up?

    07:38-07:39

    Jesus was not shocked.

    07:40-07:42

That's something that Peter's account teaches us, right?

    07:42-07:44

Jesus knows you're gonna mess up before you did.

    07:44-07:46

That leads us to the second one.

    07:46-07:55

If you've received Christ as your Lord and Savior, all of your sins are forgiven, even the bad ones, even the ones you haven't committed yet.

    07:55-07:56

You're like, well, how can that be?

    07:57-08:00

How can I be forgiven by a sin in the future?

    08:00-08:03

Do you realize when Jesus died on the cross, all of your sins were still in the future?

    08:04-08:12

You see, when you receive Jesus Christ, you're in a state, you are in a position of being pronounced not guilty.

    08:12-08:24

You can't do anything to earn salvation, and you can't do anything to lose salvation, and your standing with God is in no way, shape, or form affected by your performance.

    08:24-08:28

Your standing with God is based on Jesus Christ.

    08:29-08:30

    Nothing can change that.

    08:31-08:35

If you had the greatest day of your life yesterday, God loves you perfectly in Jesus Christ.

    08:35-08:40

And if you had the worst day of your life yesterday, God still loves you perfectly in Jesus Christ.

    08:41-08:43

So Jesus knew you were going to fail before you did.

    08:43-08:47

If you've received Christ, your sins are forgiven, even the bad ones, even the ones in the future.

    08:48-08:54

Third truth you got to embrace before we get to this outline is that today is the day to get back in the game.

    08:54-09:02

I really messed up, Pastor Jeff, and maybe someday, maybe, maybe, maybe someday, today.

    09:03-09:06

Today. Today's the only day you have for sure. Right?

    09:07-09:08

    So today's the day.

    09:10-09:14

So Jesus comes to restore Peter, and He didn't ask Peter if he was sorry.

    09:16-09:23

He didn't say, "Peter, do you promise to never ever ever do that again?" Jesus, He went right to the heart. Look at verse 15.

    09:23-09:34

It says, "When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?'" I want you to see that Jesus challenged Peter's love. Why?

    09:35-09:39

Because Jesus knows that if he gets your heart, the rest is going to follow.

    09:39-09:41

And that's what Christ wants from you. He wants your heart.

    09:44-09:45

When He has your heart, He has everything.

    09:47-09:51

You know, Jesus, He proved His love for you, didn't He?

    09:52-10:01

There's not a person walking this planet today that can question, "I wonder if Jesus loves me?" He clearly demonstrated that.

    10:01-10:05

There is no question as to whether or not Jesus loves you.

    10:06-10:13

But what you have to evaluate is, "Do you love Jesus?" You see, that's where Jesus went with Peter.

    10:14-10:26

"Do you love me?" So on your outline today, "How do I prove my love for Jesus?" "How do I prove my love for Jesus, even though I royally messed up, and I know I'm forgiven, but it's still hard?

    10:26-10:36

How do I prove my love for Jesus?" Number one, write this down, "By caring for His people." You want to prove your love for Jesus, you've got to take care of Jesus' people.

    10:38-10:39

    Pick up again verse 15.

    10:40-11:00

It says, "When I had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." First of all, notice that Jesus called Peter - we know him as Peter, Jesus called him Simon.

    11:01-11:03

    Jesus actually renamed Simon.

    11:04-11:13

Jesus, He gave him a new name, He called him Peter, which means "rock." You see, Simon was the rock before Dwayne Johnson was the rock.

    11:15-11:17

Somebody will have to explain that to you after service maybe.

    11:18-11:20

But he was the original rock.

    11:21-11:25

But sometimes, he didn't act like the rock.

    11:26-11:27

He wasn't acting like the rock.

    11:28-11:33

Jesus would not so subtly make notation of that by calling him Simon.

    11:34-11:39

"Hey, you're acting like your old self, Simon." You see that throughout the Gospels, by the way.

    11:39-11:40

    Just make note of that.

    11:41-11:45

You can tell how Peter's acting, by the way, by the name that Jesus uses to address him.

    11:46-11:52

But he says, "Do you love me," notice this, "more than these?" More than these?

    11:52-11:54

    More than what?

    11:55-11:56

Do you love me more than what?

    11:56-11:59

There's all kinds of ideas about what that means.

    11:59-12:06

There's some people that are like, well, he's talking about the fishing boats and the fishing gear, the nets and the sails and all that.

    12:07-12:09

Like, do you love me more than you love this fish?

    12:09-12:11

stuff and I don't think that's what he's talking about.

    12:12-12:25

Some people said, "Well, do you love me more than you love the other guys?" Like Simon, "Do you love me more than you love Bartholomew or whatever?" And I don't think that's what he's talking about either.

    12:26-12:39

What Jesus is saying to Simon, to Peter, to the rock, what he's saying here, "Simon, do you love me more than the other disciples love me?" Why do I think that that's what Jesus is asking?

    12:40-12:56

Because, John 5.26-33, Mark 14.29, before Jesus was arrested, Jesus said to His disciples, "You're all going to fall away on account of Me." Jesus was telling them, "I'm going to be arrested, and you're all going to scatter." But Peter speaks up.

    12:57-13:46

He's like, "Not me." And Peter went on to say, "Jesus, they might..." to the other disciples? They might! Even if every single one of them fall away, Jesus, I got your back. I would never abandon you. And I think with that in mind, Jesus is saying to Peter, "Peter, do you love me more than they do?" And Peter's response was not only humble, but he was focusing on the Lord's knowledge, not his own. You notice that he says, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." And "Take care of my people." "You love me? Take care of my people." Now, Peter wished that the conversation would have ended right there.

    13:47-13:48

    But it did not.

    13:48-13:50

Look at verse 16 and 17.

    13:51-14:12

"He said to him a second time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?' He said to him, 'Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Tend my sheep.' He said to him the third time, 'Simon, son of John, do you love me?'" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything.

    14:13-14:21

You know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep." See Jesus, he asked Peter three times.

    14:23-14:25

And I don't have a doubt in my mind that Peter made the connection.

    14:25-14:27

How many times did Peter deny knowing Jesus?

    14:28-14:29

    Three times.

    14:30-14:33

How many times did Jesus ask him if he loved him?

    14:33-14:33

    Three times.

    14:35-14:40

But there's a nuance in the Greek that is worth mentioning.

    14:41-14:45

You see, in English we have one word for love, and it's love.

    14:45-14:49

And it's hard because we use that word for everything, right?

    14:50-14:56

I love the Pittsburgh Penguins, I love my wife, I love pizza, I don't love all those things the same way, right?

    14:57-15:04

Well, there are different words for love in the Greek, and sometimes these words were used synonymously.

    15:05-15:18

In this context, you're going to see there is a very clear distinction of the words that are used for love between Jesus and Peter that helps us see what makes this conversation so impactful.

    15:20-15:23

So I believe the nuance is ultra-important here, and that's why I want to share this with you.

    15:24-15:35

But there's two words in this text being used for love. One word is "agape." Agape is self-sacrificing, committed, devoted, lay my life down for you, love.

    15:35-15:41

And the other word is phileo, which is brotherly affection.

    15:42-15:57

It's like the feeling that I would have for Ross Howes, that I wouldn't have for just some stranger I pass on the street, that I'm like, "Oh, I like this guy! He's my friend!" Okay, so agape is like self-sacrificing, devoted, committed love.

    15:57-16:00

    "Phileo" is friendship, affection.

    16:01-16:37

But in the Greek, and here's how this conversation went down, Jesus said to Peter, "Peter, do you agape me?" "Peter, are you fully committed to me?" And Peter says, "Lord, you know I love you." He said, "Lord, you know I phileo you." He said, "Lord, you know we're buddies." And then the second time, Jesus said, "Peter, do you agape Me?" "Peter, are you totally committed to Me?" And Peter says, "Lord, you know I phileo you." You know we're buddies.

    16:38-16:47

Here's the twist, the third time, Jesus says, "Peter, do you phileo Me?" And that's why the Bible says Peter was grieved.

    16:48-16:49

    Jesus used Peter's own word.

    16:50-17:01

Like, "Do you agape Me?" "I phileo you." "Do you agape Me?" "I phileo you." And Jesus is like, "Oh, you full-out owe me." And Peter's response, he says, "You know everything.

    17:01-17:09

And obviously from my failure that you totally predicted, it's obvious that you know me better than I know myself, Lord.

    17:09-17:12

And you know I full-out owe you.

    17:12-17:20

You know I care about you." You see, Jesus was saying, "Peter, you totally committed to me." Peter says, "Lord, you know we're friends.

    17:21-17:22

    What's going on here?

    17:22-17:29

I think it's pretty obvious." Peter was reluctant to make the claim of total commitment.

    17:30-17:36

You see, for Jesus to say, "Peter, you totally committed to me." Peter's like, "I think we all saw that. I failed.

    17:37-17:52

Like Jesus, I swore that I was the most agape, devoted disciple that you have, and I think everybody around here saw that that wasn't true." Peter's like, "You know, Lord, I care about you. You know that.

    17:52-17:53

    That's all I got.

    17:54-17:55

Because that's all I've been able to prove.

    17:56-18:02

So Jesus showed up here to restore Peter, and I want you to see Jesus' plan to restore Peter was just one question.

    18:02-18:04

And that's the most important question.

    18:04-18:06

And that's a question that you have to get to the heart too.

    18:08-18:11

Do you have total committed love for Jesus Christ?

    18:12-18:13

    Do you love Jesus?

    18:14-18:17

Are you totally committed to Jesus?

    18:18-18:25

You're like, "Well, how do I know?" Jesus tells Peter again three times, "Feed my sheep. Feed my lambs.

    18:25-18:40

Tend to my people." So you here today who are feeling off track, you here who are feeling that you're not close with God right now, maybe you who are listening to this and say, "I'm so ashamed of myself." I've got a word for you.

    18:41-18:41

    Jesus loves you.

    18:42-18:43

    That never changed.

    18:44-18:46

The question is, do you love Him?

    18:47-19:49

Because the same call that Jesus made to Simon is real to you. Do you love Him? Are you committed to Jesus Christ? Then feed Jesus' sheep. Love His people. Get involved in ministry. Get involved in a small group. But be intentional about showing your love for Jesus by loving His people. So how do I prove my love for Jesus? First of all, by caring for His people. Secondly, by being faithful no matter what. By being faithful no matter what. Look at verse 18, Jesus continues, He says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go." Jesus here is telling Peter the cost of of his love, of his devotion, where it's going to end up taking him.

    19:50-19:55

Once you see that Jesus compares Peter's past with his future, he says, "Peter, you know what?

    19:56-19:57

You used to live for yourself, right?

    19:58-20:00

You used to live - it's Peter's world!

    20:01-20:05

And you used to live for yourself and do what you wanted, and it's not going to be like that.

    20:06-20:12

You're going to be living a life of submission." And the way Jesus phrased this, admittedly, is very strange.

    20:13-20:20

So, thankfully for us, John clarifies what Jesus was talking about.

    20:20-20:21

    Look at verse 19.

    20:22-20:27

He says, "This he said to show by what kind of death he was going to glorify God.

    20:27-20:34

After saying this, he said to him, 'Follow me.'" Again, John clarifies what Jesus meant.

    20:35-20:44

That Peter was going to give his life to Christ, totally committed, And ultimately, he was going to glorify God in his death.

    20:45-20:51

And history tells us that Peter was crucified as a martyr for his faith.

    20:51-20:59

And history tells us that Peter didn't even consider himself worthy of being crucified in the same way that Jesus was.

    21:00-21:02

So he has to be crucified upside down.

    21:03-21:04

    And he was.

    21:05-21:09

And that's what Jesus was talking about, that you're going to be stretched out.

    21:10-21:18

In verse 19, Jesus says to Peter after all of this, He says, "Follow Me." This is so significant.

    21:19-21:24

Because you see, three years before the beach scene, let's have a flashback here.

    21:24-21:29

Three years before this, Jesus showed up at the Sea of Galilee.

    21:30-21:32

And there were some fishermen there, one of them was this dude named Simon.

    21:33-21:40

And they weren't catching anything, and Jesus shows up, and He provides for them miraculous catch of fish.

    21:41-22:04

And after that, this is in Luke chapter 5 by the way, after that Jesus says to this Simon, he says, "Follow me." Now three years later, at the same sea, after another miraculous catch of fish, Jesus turns to that same fisherman and says, "What?" "Follow me." Do you see the beauty of this scene?

    22:05-22:13

It's like this is where Jesus found Peter, And this is what Jesus said to Peter at the beginning, and now, the story continues as it began.

    22:14-22:16

    Peter answered the call before.

    22:17-22:21

Now Jesus is calling Peter to recommit for what's next.

    22:22-22:23

    What's next for Peter?

    22:24-22:26

He became the leader of the early church.

    22:27-22:30

We just spent three years in the book of Acts, we spent a lot of time talking about that.

    22:31-22:31

    Follow me.

    22:32-22:35

Being led by the shepherd, wherever he takes you.

    22:36-22:36

    Follow me!

    22:38-22:50

Jesus was making it clear to Peter, as Jesus made clear so many times in His ministry, that being a disciple only means being willing to follow all the way.

    22:52-22:52

    Only.

    22:53-22:55

That's the only kind of real disciple there is.

    22:56-22:59

    If you're like, "I'm a part-time disciple," then you're not a disciple.

    23:00-23:04

If you're like, "I'll follow Jesus as long as it doesn't cost me anything," then you're not a disciple.

    23:05-23:08

You're a follow Jesus as long as it doesn't get too hard.

    23:09-23:09

    You're not a disciple.

    23:11-23:12

    There's no variance here.

    23:12-23:15

You're either a hundred percent or zero percent.

    23:16-23:22

And I think that's why Jesus was telling Peter, this is how you're gonna die.

    23:23-23:26

Because like the heat was on before and you pretend you didn't know me.

    23:26-23:29

The next time the heat's on, you're gonna lay down your life.

    23:30-23:32

Being a disciple only means being willing to follow all the way.

    23:32-23:33

    wherever He sends you.

    23:35-23:44

Wherever He sends you, whether that's your backyard, whether that's out in this community, or whether it's overseas, wherever He sends you.

    23:45-23:47

But that also means whatever happens to you.

    23:48-23:56

When you follow Jesus, or if you are following Jesus, are you going to follow Him even if a terrible sickness enters into your life?

    23:57-24:02

Whether it's you or somebody else close to you, Are you still going to follow Him then?

    24:03-24:05

What if you experience great loss?

    24:05-24:07

Are you going to keep following Him then?

    24:08-24:10

What if you experience a terrible tragedy in your life?

    24:11-24:13

Are you going to keep following Jesus then?

    24:14-24:15

What if you face incredible opposition?

    24:17-24:18

What are you going to do? Are you going to quit?

    24:20-24:23

Because really the difference between you and Peter is just simply this.

    24:24-24:26

Peter was told how he was going to die.

    24:27-24:35

And again, I think that was to reassure him that, "Hey Peter, next time things are going to go down a little bit different." But that's the difference. He was told how he was going to die.

    24:36-24:37

But do you know what you and Peter have in common?

    24:38-24:39

Is you're both told how to live.

    24:40-24:42

Do you love Jesus? Follow Him.

    24:44-24:51

Every new call that He places on your life is a chance for you to renew your commitment.

    24:53-24:54

    Do you love Him?

    24:55-24:57

Then you be faithful to Him no matter what happens in your life.

    24:58-25:02

No matter how hard it gets, no matter what it costs you, follow Him.

    25:03-25:07

And finally for today, how do I show, how do I prove my love for Jesus?

    25:08-25:10

By refusing to compare myself with others.

    25:11-25:12

By refusing to compare myself with others.

    25:12-25:13

    Look at verse 20.

    25:14-25:30

Okay, so Jesus just said, "Follow Me!" Verse 20, "Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who had been reclining at the table close to him, And it said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?" Now that's John.

    25:31-25:35

John is pretty modest, and he doesn't identify himself in the Gospel.

    25:35-25:42

So when he's talking about himself in a scene, he just refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved.

    25:42-25:42

    Right?

    25:44-25:46

    So he was following them.

    25:46-25:48

Apparently they were walking as they were talking.

    25:49-26:10

Verse 21, it says, "When Peter saw him," John, When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?" Now listen, listen, if you hold your Bible up close, you can almost hear the face palms of the other disciples when Peter said that.

    26:10-26:21

That they go through this whole exchange, "Do you love me?" and "Feed my sheep" and "Follow me." And then immediately Peter looks at John, he's like, "Yeah, what about him?" What about Him?

    26:22-26:28

Do you remember, Peter, do you remember what happened the last time you were comparing yourself with the other disciples?

    26:28-26:28

    Do you remember that?

    26:29-26:33

"Oh, even if they fall away, I never will." How did that work out?

    26:34-26:39

And you, Peter, seriously, you still have your eyes on what the other disciples are doing?

    26:41-26:41

    Seriously?

    26:42-26:43

    Look at verse 22.

    26:44-26:49

"Jesus said to him, 'If it is my will that he remain until I come,'" What is that to you?

    26:50-26:55

"You follow Me, that John remain until he come." What does that mean?

    26:56-27:01

Was this some spiritual thing or was this just purely a hypothetical statement?

    27:01-27:05

If he remained until I come, what did that mean?

    27:05-27:08

Well, I know what it didn't mean because he tells us in verse 23.

    27:09-27:14

"So the saying spread abroad among the brothers that this disciple was not to die.

    27:14-27:24

Yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but if it is My will that He remain until I come, what is that to you?" Okay, so John clarifies again.

    27:25-27:28

Jesus wasn't saying John was going to be immortal.

    27:31-27:34

But if you're fixated on what that statement meant, then you're missing the point.

    27:36-27:56

Because you see, when Peter's like, "What about Him?" What Jesus was saying in a very Jesus way was, "It's none of your business." "It's not your business. You follow Me." Now before we pick on Peter, and before we're all like, "Shame on you!

    27:56-27:58

You should have learned your lesson, Peter!

    27:59-28:04

Can't believe you're still comparing yourself, Peter!" Look, we all do it, okay? We all do it.

    28:06-28:12

We get more interested in other people's journeys than our own, don't we?

    28:12-28:23

Positive or negative, we get more fixated on what other people are doing with Jesus or what Jesus is doing with other people, instead of focusing on our own walk.

    28:24-28:27

And I gotta tell you, as a pastor, that is tough not to do.

    28:27-28:35

You know, because I'm like, "Well, what about that church down the street it's doing a sermon series based on Michael Jackson songs.

    28:36-28:38

I'm like, "What about them, Lord?

    28:38-28:41

I mean, they're not even preaching the Bible!

    28:41-28:43

They're like on Michael Jackson songs!

    28:43-28:55

Like, what about them?" And Jesus says, "That's not your business." Jesus says, "You follow me." And we're all like, "Well, what about the sex abuse in the Catholic church?" Yeah, pray for them.

    28:56-28:59

Pray for them, but you know that has nothing to do with your walk with Christ.

    28:59-29:02

That has nothing to do with your walk with Christ.

    29:03-29:06

Jesus says, "You follow Me." And somebody's like, "But what about my husband?

    29:07-29:08

My husband doesn't even go to church.

    29:09-29:13

My husband doesn't even seem interested in church." Yeah, Jesus is going to deal with him.

    29:14-29:43

In the meantime, Jesus says to you, "You follow Me." And so many times over the years, I've heard, "You know, Jeff, that preacher on TV did this." "I went to this church and the pastor was caught in a scandal, and you're all just a bunch of hypocrites." And they somehow excuse themselves from following Christ personally, because something they saw some other Christian do.

    29:43-29:48

And if this is you, hey, it's not your business, man.

    29:48-29:49

    It's not your business.

    29:50-30:00

Jesus says, "You follow Him. You follow Him." You're always going to find somebody that's further down the road than you spiritually.

    30:01-30:06

And you're always going to find someone who dishonors the name of Christ.

    30:06-30:11

So comparing yourself and your walk with someone else and their walk is pointless.

    30:11-30:13

Because here's the thing, God has a plan for you.

    30:14-30:16

God has a plan for your journey.

    30:16-30:22

And the only person whose walk with Christ you need to be focused on is yours.

    30:22-30:25

You know, sometimes we just make things harder than they need to be.

    30:26-30:27

    Have you completely blown it?

    30:27-30:28

    Are you off track?

    30:29-30:33

Do you feel guilty about how you've failed Christ?

    30:34-30:34

    You're forgiven.

    30:35-30:38

He has already taken care of that.

    30:38-30:40

What you need to do is get back to this one thing.

    30:41-30:41

    One thing.

    30:42-30:44

And that one thing is this, do you love Jesus? Do you love Him?

    30:46-30:47

    Do you really love Him?

    30:47-30:49

Then get back on the horse.

    30:49-30:50

    Care for His people.

    30:50-30:53

Be faithful to Him no matter what happens.

    30:54-30:57

And don't compare yourself to other people.

    30:57-31:05

Because like Peter, to you, today, Jesus is saying, "Do you love Me? Then follow Me." Let's pray.

    31:06-31:10

Father in Heaven, what a glorious thing that Your love is not in doubt.

    31:10-31:15

Your love has been so clearly demonstrated in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

    31:16-31:25

Your love is so clearly demonstrated in that you spared not your own son, but delivered him up for us all, and on top, freely give us all things.

    31:26-31:28

Your love is so clearly demonstrated, Father.

    31:29-31:31

God, you know we're fallen people and we mess up.

    31:32-31:37

We have done stupid things, we have said stupid things, we have had horrible attitudes.

    31:37-31:40

God, there's not a person in this room more guilty of that than me.

    31:41-31:44

And sometimes, Father, we feel kind of like Peter standing on the beach.

    31:44-31:45

    I messed up.

    31:46-31:47

    God must be disappointed.

    31:48-31:51

But Father, we thank You that You're a God who restores.

    31:51-31:58

But Father, today I pray for myself and for my brothers and sisters here, that we would just get back to that one thing.

    31:59-32:00

    Do we love You?

    32:01-32:02

    Do we love You?

    32:03-32:03

    Do I love You?

    32:05-32:09

Father, let us, yes, make restitution to people where needed.

    32:09-32:11

    Let's apologize where needed.

    32:12-32:19

But Father, please, by Your grace, by the power of Your Spirit, Let us not wallow in the failures that we committed that you knew we were going to do before we did.

    32:20-32:26

But instead, Father, let us get back to the thing that you've called us to, which is following Jesus Christ.

    32:27-32:35

Not comparing ourselves, not throwing in the towel when things get hard, but by intentionally loving Jesus' people.

    32:36-32:41

Only by your power and your grace, Father, we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion

WHOLE GROUP
Read John 21:15-23

1 - Though we know we are forgiven in Christ (those who have received Him!), we do we still struggle with guilt from time to time?

2 - Discuss the usage of the words for “love” in the exchange between Jesus and Peter (John 21:15-17). What is the significance? What kind of love does Jesus call us to? What does that look like?

3 - How do we often compare ourselves to other Christians / churches? Why do we do this? How does Jesus’ statement to Peter (John 21:22) address our desire to compare ourselves with others?

BREAKOUT

What are YOU doing right now to “love Jesus’ people”? What is He calling you to do? What is keeping you from doing it?

Alright, Colossians 1, are you there?

    00:35-00:36

    Alright, let's pray.

    00:37-00:43

Father in heaven, we believe that this book is Your Word.

    00:43-00:46

And I pray, Father, that we would treat it as such.

    00:48-00:55

We would respond to it as if You Yourself are speaking directly to us, because You are.

    00:56-00:58

Tune our hearts into what You have to say.

    00:59-01:01

    In Jesus' name, Amen.

    01:01-01:11

We're in a series called "Bible Basics." We're looking at the Bible as a whole, and along the way, we are meeting some people and learning some lessons.

    01:12-01:18

All these messages are available on our website, but in case you missed any, here's what we've covered so far.

    01:18-01:22

Abraham taught us what it means to have faith in the Lord.

    01:23-01:30

Joseph taught us what it means to trust in the Lord, and Moses taught us what it means to be dependent upon the Lord.

    01:30-01:33

Joshua taught us what it means to have courage in the Lord.

    01:34-01:38

Saul taught us the dangers of being disobedient to the Lord.

    01:38-01:41

David showed us what it's like to worship the Lord.

    01:42-01:48

And Solomon last week showed us what it means to get wisdom from the Lord.

    01:50-01:53

Well, we're going to jump quite a bit after Solomon.

    01:53-01:56

I'm going to make a very long story very short.

    01:56-02:04

that after Solomon, the nation of Israel was divided, and they were judged for their sin by being sent into exile.

    02:05-02:12

While God in His grace allowed Israel to return to their land, and eventually, while living in their land, they were under Roman occupation.

    02:13-02:21

And that is the chapter of history that God did the most personal and profound thing that He's ever done.

    02:22-02:24

He showed up in the form of a man.

    02:25-02:29

Today, in this ten week series, today is the main event.

    02:29-02:31

Because we're going to be talking about Jesus Christ.

    02:32-02:39

I don't imagine you expected a series on important people from the Bible without mentioning the most important person in the universe.

    02:41-02:41

    Jesus Christ.

    02:42-02:49

Bible Basics, I mean, literally, this entire book is about Jesus Christ.

    02:49-02:51

    Really? Yes, really.

    02:51-02:54

Look at what Jesus said about the Word of God.

    02:54-03:18

Jesus said, "You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life." He was speaking to a group of people that thought, "Well, if I just read this and keep the rules, I'll have eternal life." But Jesus said, "It is they that bear witness about Me." Jesus said that the Bible, the entire Bible, is about Him.

    03:19-03:25

So today we're going to just answer one simple question.

    03:26-03:27

    Who is Jesus Christ?

    03:29-03:30

I'm sure you've heard the name.

    03:31-03:32

    But who is He really?

    03:33-03:39

I can't possibly overstate this, but this is the most important question you will ever answer in your entire life.

    03:40-03:42

    Who is Jesus Christ?

    03:42-03:44

Why is this question so important?

    03:45-04:17

You know, there's a certain phrase that you hear here that should always get your attention, and that phrase is, "You're going to die." I want you to see how Jesus used that phrase. John 8, 24, Jesus said, "I told you that you would die in your sins." He doesn't just mean physically dead, He means spiritually, eternally dead. "I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am He, You will die in your sins." Interestingly, the word "he" was not in the original writing.

    04:18-04:23

Jesus didn't say literally "I am he." That was added literally.

    04:23-04:31

Jesus said, "For unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins." Why would He say it that way?

    04:32-04:50

Because God in the Old Testament to Moses said that His name is "I am." Jesus here is saying, "Unless you believe that I am, unless you believe that I am the I am, you will die in your sins." In other words, your eternity hinges on who you believe Jesus Christ is.

    04:51-04:52

Let's see what the Bible says.

    04:53-05:00

In Colossians 1, Paul, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, wrote this letter to a church that was plagued by false teachers.

    05:01-05:04

And there were all kinds of different opinions about who Jesus is.

    05:06-05:08

And truth be told, not much has changed.

    05:09-05:14

Because today there are a lot of different opinions about who Jesus Christ is.

    05:14-05:21

And cults, false religions, are founded on wrong ideas of who Jesus Christ is.

    05:22-05:28

No one in history has been more misrepresented than Jesus Christ.

    05:30-05:38

The cults, straight from the pit of hell, have badly distorted who He is, even to this day.

    05:38-05:45

For example, the Muslims believe that Jesus is a prophet, but it's blasphemous to call Him God.

    05:45-05:57

The Mormons believe that Jesus is the brother of Satan, created by Elohim through a sexual act with Mary, who is one of Elohim's wives.

    05:57-06:05

The Jehovah's Witnesses believe that Jesus isn't divine, but He was actually a creation of Jehovah.

    06:07-06:12

The Christian scientists believe that Jesus was just an enlightened Christian scientist.

    06:12-06:20

That that word "Christ" refers to an advanced degree of consciousness that everyone has to some degree.

    06:22-06:24

That word "Christ" is a title, by the way.

    06:24-06:27

It means "the anointed one." It means he's the Messiah.

    06:27-06:28

    Christ isn't his last name.

    06:28-06:29

    It's a title.

    06:30-06:33

But the Christian scientists have chosen to redefine that.

    06:35-06:44

Scientologists believe that Jesus was an advanced human who had a "strong energy glow." I don't know what that means either.

    06:45-06:48

False teachers often seem to be fans of Jesus, okay?

    06:50-06:54

Just because somebody mentions the name of Jesus doesn't mean that they understand him.

    06:55-06:57

In fact, many false teachers seem to be fans of Jesus.

    06:57-07:00

They don't deny Jesus, they dethrone Jesus.

    07:01-07:03

And that's a problem, according to Jesus.

    07:05-07:11

Several years ago, this was before kids, Aaron and I, we were in big lots.

    07:12-07:12

    I know.

    07:13-07:15

You're like, "What are we paying that guy?

    07:15-07:18

I didn't know he was such a high roller." Yes, we were in big lots.

    07:19-07:20

I only treat my lady to the best.

    07:21-07:21

    We were in big lots.

    07:22-07:24

We ran into this lady, complete stranger.

    07:24-07:25

    We remember this, Aaron.

    07:25-07:30

We were a complete stranger, and we got to talking as an older lady.

    07:30-07:38

And I don't even know, I don't go looking for these things, I don't even know how this happened, but we started talking about spiritual things, and I found out she was a Jehovah's Witness.

    07:40-07:49

And in the conversation, she made some comment about the heaven and earth being eternal, as the Jehovah's Witnesses believe.

    07:49-08:55

And I said, "Well, actually, the Bible says that this heaven and earth are going to be burn up because God's going to create a new heaven and a new earth and she's like the Bible does not say that wouldn't you know what aisle we were in the aisle with the Bibles and the Bibles of big lots read just like the ones that you have on your lap like Pastor Jeff I got my Bible with big lots good well I grabbed the Bible from the shelf and I said actually I flipped open to us 2nd Peter chapter 3 verse 10 and I showed it to her I said actually this is what the Bible says. And how do I forget this? She looked at it, she goes, "Well I've never read that." I'm like, "Well you're reading it now!" She's like, "No, I don't believe that." And that was sort of how the conversation ended because like what else can I add to that? Really. You're looking at the Word of God and you're like, "Here's my point with with that little story. Maybe sitting here today or you're listening to this on our website and you're not sure about Jesus.

    08:57-09:02

But in a few minutes, you're going to understand how God's Word views Jesus.

    09:02-09:07

You're going to see some things in the Bible about, you know, this is what the Bible says about Jesus.

    09:08-09:10

And you might be like that Jehovah's Witness lady.

    09:10-09:16

You might say, "Well, I've never read that before." And my response to you will be, "Well, you've seen it now.

    09:16-09:18

You have to do something with it.

    09:19-09:19

    You have to.

    09:21-09:40

How ignorant was that woman to see what God's Word says, and just be like, "I'm going to pretend that I didn't see that." And how much more ignorant would you be to see what the Bible says about Jesus Christ, and just walk out and be like, "I'm going to pretend that I didn't see that." Because your eternity hinges on this, people.

    09:41-09:42

You've got to do something with it.

    09:43-09:45

    So who is Jesus Christ?

    09:46-09:49

Well, if you want the short version of the sermon, here it is.

    09:51-10:02

"Jesus is preeminent." I tried to think of the best word that I could think of to describe Jesus in one word, and I couldn't think of anything greater than this.

    10:02-10:05

And actually, this is the word that God Himself uses to describe Jesus.

    10:05-10:17

So I'm like, "Well, if God used it, I'm going to use it." The word "preeminent" means "most important," means "superior." And you're like, "Jesus is preeminent over what?" Everything! Everything!

    10:19-10:22

That's the short version, and if that's all you're interested in, you can go.

    10:23-10:30

But if you're like in the camp of, "Can you be more specific?" Yes, I can.

    10:30-10:33

Colossians 1, jot these three things down.

    10:34-10:38

First of all, number one, as God, He is the Creator.

    10:40-10:56

Verse 15, talking about Jesus, the Holy Spirit tells us, "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation." That's the first thing you need to know about Jesus.

    10:56-10:58

He is the image of the invisible God.

    11:00-11:01

Image, let's talk about that for a second.

    11:01-11:02

    Wait, wait, wait, wait.

    11:02-11:05

Doesn't the Bible say that we are made in God's image?

    11:05-11:10

Yes, we are made in God's image, but Jesus is the image of God.

    11:11-11:23

The word "image" actually is translated "icon." And that's used in the Bible back in Matthew 22.20, talking about the image of Caesar on a coin.

    11:24-11:30

Think about that. The average Roman would not have seen Caesar.

    11:30-11:35

You know that they didn't have TV and Internet and all the things today.

    11:35-11:38

We all know what the president looks like.

    11:38-11:41

We all know what leaders of other countries look like.

    11:41-11:45

But in that day, a lot of people would not have known what Caesar looked like face to face.

    11:45-11:48

All they had was an image on a coin.

    11:48-11:51

That was the only representation they had.

    11:51-12:02

So if you would go to one of the Romans who's never seen Caesar, like, "What's he like?" "Well, I guess he's like this." You see, God gave representation of himself, not on a coin.

    12:03-12:06

the representation God gave of Himself was in the form of a person.

    12:08-12:10

God's like, "Do you want to know what I'm like?

    12:10-12:20

I will walk among you as a man, and that man's name is Jesus Christ." So understand that Jesus isn't like God.

    12:20-12:24

Jesus is God, and everything that God is, is Jesus.

    12:25-12:38

Jesus said in John 14, verse 9 to Philip, He said, "Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father." So if you want to know what God is like, Jesus said to look at Him.

    12:39-12:53

The second part of that, it says, "the firstborn of all creation." Now that word "firstborn," that's an interesting term, because it doesn't always mean chronologically the first born.

    12:55-12:58

Actually, this word is used figuratively all through the Bible.

    12:59-13:02

It means the highest ranking, the number one, the priority.

    13:02-13:09

You see, the firstborn in a home oftentimes was chronologically the first child that was born.

    13:09-13:12

But that title went to the child that had the place of honor.

    13:13-13:21

Sometimes it wasn't firstborn, but even in the Bible, sometimes the position of firstborn would go to a younger child.

    13:22-13:28

It just means the position of prominence and honor, the highest ranking, numero uno.

    13:28-13:33

Like I said, the Bible uses the term "firstborn" figuratively throughout.

    13:33-13:35

I'm just going to give you a couple of examples.

    13:35-13:46

I want you to see this term "firstborn" literally means "position of honor." Exodus 4.22 and Jeremiah 31.9, God calls Israel His firstborn.

    13:47-13:49

Israel was not the first nation to live on the earth.

    13:50-13:52

But God says Israel has a place of honor.

    13:54-14:03

Job 18.13, talking about a disease, it's called "the firstborn of death." It wasn't the first disease to ever exist on the earth.

    14:04-14:11

But God says, "It's the worst." Isaiah 14.30 talks about the firstborn of the poor.

    14:12-14:17

It wasn't the first people on earth who were ever poor, it's talking about the poorest of the poor.

    14:18-14:19

    Why are you stressing this?

    14:20-14:25

Because cults use this term to say, "Well, Jesus was the first person created." It says right there.

    14:26-14:29

And you are going to see in a second, He is clearly not teaching that.

    14:30-14:37

The word "firstborn" is "place of highest position." And it says here that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation.

    14:38-14:39

    Creation is always under attack.

    14:41-14:42

Which is how the devil wants it.

    14:42-14:50

And this is a whole other sermon series, but the false teaching of evolution constantly bombarded in media and in schools.

    14:50-15:00

I remember in school having to write in a biology class an essay about how evolution worked and we were graded based on how well we could repeat that.

    15:00-15:04

Why would the enemy want us to constantly be bombarded with evolution?

    15:04-15:11

The reason is because if we don't think Jesus created us, we will not acknowledge His right to rule over us.

    15:12-15:14

That's a sermon series for another time.

    15:15-15:31

Look at verse 16 for the person that thinks, "Well, Jesus is a created thing." Think of verse 16, "For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

    15:31-15:36

All things were created through Him and for Him." All things.

    15:37-15:43

All things were created, the last phrase says, "through Him and for Him." You need to underline that in your Bible.

    15:44-15:49

Because many people go to church with the idea of getting something from Jesus.

    15:49-15:52

Now listen, don't misrepresent me, don't misunderstand me.

    15:52-15:55

We are broken people and we desperately do need some things from the Lord.

    15:56-15:57

    That's absolutely true.

    15:58-15:59

    We are hurting.

    15:59-16:05

There are people here today that are hurting, that need the kind of healing that only the Lord can give.

    16:06-16:07

    I am not discounting that.

    16:12-16:39

I think too many times the mindset of going to church or finding a church or shopping around for a church is the idea of I want something for me as if God's up there just waiting to serve me and yes God does want to he does want to bless you and God does want to do awesome things for you but when you look When you look at a passage like this, I think too often we just get it backwards.

    16:41-16:53

Instead of saying, "I want something from Jesus," you look at a phrase like this, it says, "All things were created through Him and for Him," and I have to ask, "What does He want from me?

    16:54-16:59

How can I serve Him?" And church, you need to personalize this truth.

    17:00-17:05

I am here because of Jesus, and I am here for Jesus.

    17:07-17:08

How would that change the church culture?

    17:09-17:11

If people went to church with that mentality?

    17:13-17:19

Instead of, "I'm looking for a church that can give me what I want." How would it change if people said, "You know what?

    17:20-17:23

I'm looking for a church where I can serve Jesus Christ.

    17:23-17:26

He's the Lord, and I was created for Him.

    17:26-17:30

I'm looking for a place where I can work for Christ.

    17:31-17:34

It certainly changes the way we look at church, doesn't it?

    17:34-17:44

Verse 17 says, "He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." This isn't a metaphor.

    17:45-17:48

"All things hold together." It's not a metaphor, it's not just some figure of speech.

    17:48-17:57

Like, "Well, my grandma kind of held the family together." No, what this means is Jesus literally, He physically holds the entire universe together.

    17:58-17:58

    How do you know that?

    17:59-18:03

Because Hebrews 1.3 says that He upholds the universe by the word of His power.

    18:05-18:06

    What does that mean?

    18:07-18:08

Well, I did a little studying this week.

    18:09-18:20

You know the nucleus of an oxygen atom has eight positively charged protons and eight neutrons which neutrons have no charge.

    18:20-18:27

Well, like charges of electricity in magnetic poles, they actually repel each other, right?

    18:28-18:32

You remember when you were kids and there were those magnets that had the N and the S on it?

    18:33-18:39

And if you put the N and the S, they would stick together, but if you tried to put an N and an N, they would actually repel each other.

    18:39-18:40

    Anybody else do this?

    18:40-18:41

Okay, you know what I'm talking about?

    18:42-18:44

Somebody here is like, "What's a magnet?" All right?

    18:45-18:46

    Google it, I guess.

    18:47-19:02

Okay, so if like charges actually repel each other, the question is, what holds the nucleus of an oxygen atom together if it's just positively charged protons?

    19:04-19:05

Why don't the atoms just fly apart?

    19:08-19:16

Well, scientists have been baffled by this, and I did some digging this week to try to figure out how does science explain this?

    19:16-19:18

I know what the Bible says, but how does science explain this?

    19:18-19:19

    And I found the answer.

    19:20-19:23

Do you know how science answers this?

    19:25-19:26

It's called, are you ready for this?

    19:27-19:29

    It's called strong force.

    19:31-19:32

    Any follow up questions?

    19:33-19:34

    What's strong force?

    19:35-19:37

Yeah, that was my follow up.

    19:37-19:38

You know what we call it?

    19:39-19:41

Jesus, that's what we call it.

    19:41-19:42

    It's Jesus.

    19:43-19:45

    He literally holds everything together.

    19:48-19:50

He made everything and He holds it all together.

    19:51-19:53

As God, He is the Creator. Secondly, as God, He is the Authority.

    19:54-19:55

    Look at verse 18.

    19:56-19:58

It says, "And He is the head of the body, the church.

    19:59-20:06

He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything He might be preeminent." There's that word.

    20:08-20:09

First of all, it says He's the head of the church.

    20:10-20:15

Now when the Bible says "head of the church," it doesn't mean like he's the president of the church.

    20:17-20:27

You know, the Bible uses a lot of different analogies to describe the church, and one of them that's most frequently used, the sustained metaphor, the Bible says the church is a body.

    20:27-20:28

We are a body of believers.

    20:29-20:34

And we are one, but we are many parts, and each part has different functions, just like a human body.

    20:35-20:42

But also in this metaphor, and this is what the Holy Spirit is talking about here, Jesus Christ is the head of the body.

    20:43-20:47

So what is a body that doesn't have a head?

    20:47-20:48

    What do you call that?

    20:49-20:50

    You call that dead, right?

    20:51-20:54

    If a body doesn't have a head, it's dead.

    20:55-20:58

What do you call a body that has more than one head?

    20:59-21:00

    A monster.

    21:01-21:05

You see, the church is dead without Jesus Christ.

    21:05-21:09

See, this speaks to His authority Because the head commands the body.

    21:10-21:14

When you move, it's because your head has told your body to move.

    21:14-21:19

When you walk, that has to come from your brain telling your legs to move.

    21:20-21:23

When you move your hand, it's your brain telling your hand what to do.

    21:23-21:30

And if you're telling your hand to do something and it's not doing it, you would say, "There's something seriously wrong, right?

    21:30-21:45

I need to go to the doctor because my body's not responding to what I want it to do." In the same way, church, we have a major problem when our church body is not responding to what the head wants the body to do.

    21:46-21:48

Our authority is Christ and His Word.

    21:48-21:52

Our power must be from the presence of Christ in us.

    21:53-22:01

Otherwise, if that is not the case, if Jesus Christ is not the head of this church, then we are not even a church.

    22:03-22:08

We're just a club of nice yinzers that get together and sing songs.

    22:09-22:11

He says that Jesus is the firstborn from the dead.

    22:12-22:14

There's that term "firstborn" again, right?

    22:15-22:17

Jesus was not the first person ever to resurrect.

    22:19-22:23

Again, that term "firstborn" means, not chronological, but place of prominence.

    22:24-22:29

In other words, Jesus Christ is the greatest person to have ever resurrected.

    22:30-22:35

Why? Because Jesus Christ's resurrection guarantees ours.

    22:36-22:41

As God, Jesus Christ is the Creator. As God, He is the Authority.

    22:42-22:47

And finally for today, as God, He is the Savior.

    22:48-22:50

    He is the Savior.

    22:53-23:05

Verse 19 says, "For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell." You see, Jesus wasn't a piece of the pie.

    23:07-23:09

    He was the whole thing.

    23:10-23:15

All of God, present in Jesus Christ.

    23:17-23:25

And you're like, "Pastor Jeff, can you explain that?" The answer is, "No, I cannot." He is way too big for me to explain.

    23:26-23:31

And you're never going to meet anyone that can explain God, because He is awesome.

    23:32-23:50

Verse 20 says, "And through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross." Reconcile all things. That does not mean everyone gets saved.

    23:51-24:00

The word reconcile literally means to change or to exchange and what this literally means is restore.

    24:00-24:08

In other words, to sum up everything he's saying in verse 20, he's saying all things are going to submit to Jesus Christ.

    24:08-24:09

    That's what he's saying.

    24:09-24:16

Everything one day is going to submit to Christ, making peace by the blood of his cross.

    24:17-24:19

Making peace sounds like there's a war.

    24:20-24:46

there is because by nature, by nature God is your enemy. We are born with a sin nature and we are sinners by choice and because we are sinners in our natural state, the way things are, naturally we are enemies of God or God is actually our enemy. I did some math.

    24:46-24:48

I'm going to throw you a bone here.

    24:49-24:59

I'm going to say, "Let's pretend that you only sin three times a day." But I'm just going to throw you a bone and say, "Let's pretend that you only sin three times a day," which is actually impossible.

    24:59-25:04

You and I sin more than that before we even have our feet hit the ground in the morning.

    25:06-25:11

Sinful, wicked, rebellious, evil thoughts, words, actions, attitudes.

    25:12-25:13

Let's say you sin three times a day.

    25:14-25:21

If you're 20 years old, that means you would have sinned 21,900 times in your life.

    25:22-25:24

    21,900 times.

    25:25-25:32

If you're 30 years old, you would have sinned 32,850 times in your life.

    25:33-25:37

And if you're 50, you would have sinned just three times a day.

    25:37-25:45

If you're 50 years old, that means you would have sinned 54,750 times in your life, just three times a day.

    25:48-25:50

    54,750 times in your life.

    25:51-26:06

And for the person that's like, "I don't see what the big deal is about sin," if you were to stand before a judge at the local courthouse and you had 54,750 felonies on your record, what are the chances that you're getting off?

    26:08-27:14

One of the chances that you're getting off standing before a holy God who is judge, and I think it's safe to say we have exponentially many more crimes on our rap sheet, but you know it's not even a great analogy in this sense. If I commit a crime here and I stand before the judge, that wasn't a personal crime against that judge, unless I like robbed his house or broke into his car or something, but the judge wouldn't like take it personally. But you understand, sin is very personal to God. When he says, "Don't do this," and we choose to do it, or God says, "I want you to do this," and we say, "No, I'm not going to do that," that's a personal affront against the person of God. So you're standing before a holy, perfect God that you've committed, if you're 50, if you've committed 54,750 crimes against Him, what are your chances of Him throwing the case out?

    27:15-27:58

But see, that's what makes this such a beautiful verse, because it says, "He made peace by the blood of His cross." To sum up this passage, what Paul is saying is this God, this holy, sovereign, awesome, fall on your face before Him God, this God, willingly allowed Himself to be nailed to a cross because of His love for you, because of your need for salvation, because of your need for the peace that could only come.

    27:58-28:01

    This God did this.

    28:02-28:35

And I need to tell you, with all due respect, if this concept of this holy, awesome God, this transcendent, created the world, by speaking it rules over every molecule in the universe, that God dying for you, If that concept doesn't blow your mind and make you want to fall to your face with awe and reverence and gratitude, then you are dead inside.

    28:36-28:37

    You just are.

    28:38-28:43

So today as I close, I'm not going to tell you to make Jesus Lord.

    28:44-28:45

I'm not going to tell you that.

    28:47-28:50

Like, isn't this a place where the pastor says, "You know what you need to do today?

    28:50-28:53

you need to make Jesus Lord. Well, I am not going to tell you that.

    28:54-28:55

    He already is.

    28:57-29:04

And you can choose to acknowledge that now, or you're going to be forced to acknowledge that later.

    29:05-29:12

But Philippians chapter 2 makes it quite clear that every knee will bow to Jesus Christ someday.

    29:14-29:16

But today is the day of grace.

    29:19-29:29

Father in heaven, as we've been praying all morning, before service, and during service, we pray again that Your Holy Spirit grab our hearts.

    29:30-29:39

For the person who needs prayer, for those in our lives that we know who need Jesus Christ, let this be a place of prayer.

    29:40-29:44

That we're not just talking at You, God, we are talking with You.

    29:45-29:48

We are communing with You. We are seeing Your hand at work.

    29:49-29:53

Father, if there is anyone here who needs to take this step, don't let them put it off.

    29:54-30:00

You, Father, certainly did not hesitate when it came to pursuing a relationship with us.

    30:01-30:07

Let us not be people who hesitate in responding to the work that You have done in Jesus Christ.

    30:07-30:14

You have paid the debt of our sin. You have made peace by paying the price.

    30:14-30:18

Let us gratefully receive that gift.

    30:20-30:22

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Solomon: Wisdom.

Introduction / Review:

Wise Up About Wisdom (1 Kings 3:1-28):

  1. You have to know you Need it. (1 Kings 3:7)
  2. You have to know Where to get it. (1 Kings 3:9)

James 1:5 - If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

  1. You have to Apply it. (1 Kings 3:16-28)
  2. Proverbs 18:17 - The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him.

Proverbs 18:13 - If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.

Proverbs 12:13 - An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous escapes from trouble.

Five Principles for Making Wise Decisions in "Grey Areas": (1 Corinthians 6-8-10)

  1. Is it Permissible ? (1 Cor 6:12)

1 Cor 6:12 - "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything.

  2. Is it Beneficial ? (1 Cor 6:12)
  3. Is it free from possible Addiction ? (1 Cor 6:8-10)
  4. Is it free from causing a brother to Stumble ? (1 Cor 8:12-13)

1 Cor 8:12-13 - Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

  5. Is Glorifying to God? (1 Cor 10:31)

1 Cor 10:31 - So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Prov 8:11 - ...wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.

    1 Kings 3.

    00:46-00:56

The story goes, and it's not a true story, but this man in California was walking along the beach and he found a lamp.

    00:56-00:57

You know how these stories go, right?

    00:57-01:02

He picks up the lamp and he dusts the lamp off and out comes a genie!

And the genie says, for freeing me from my thing or whatever, I'm going to grant you one wish, whatever you want, you name it." And the man said, "All right.

Do you know, I love Hawaii, but I am scared to death to fly.

    01:19-01:29

Can you make me a bridge that goes from California to Hawaii so when I want to go, I can just drive?" And the genie's like, "Oh, come on, man. Listen, listen.

    01:31-01:35

A request like that, that's a lot of material.

    01:35-01:44

"You've got to get the permits, you've got to get the right inspectors and the engineers in." It's a big hassle. It's just way too much.

    01:45-01:47

Your request is just too complicated.

    01:48-01:49

    Is there anything else?

    01:50-01:52

Anything else at all that you might wish for?

    01:53-02:01

And the man says, "Well, you know I've been married for 16 years, and I love my wife to death, but sometimes I just can't figure her out.

    02:02-02:16

Could you grant me the ability to understand the way my wife's mind works?" And the genie said, "So that bridge, you wanted four lanes, you wanted two lanes, you wanted painted guardrails?

    02:18-02:28

If you had one wish, what would you wish for?" But do you know there was actually a time in history that that scenario actually happened for real?

    02:29-02:33

It wasn't a genie, it was the Lord.

    02:36-02:46

Showed up and said to the man who we will be focusing on today, King Solomon, he said, I'll give you whatever you want.

    02:48-02:49

Today we're going to talk about Solomon.

    02:49-02:58

He replaced his dad David, who we talked about last week, he replaced his dad David as king, And Solomon was known for his wisdom.

    03:00-03:01

He was known for his wisdom.

    03:01-03:02

    What is wisdom?

    03:03-03:08

Well, to define wisdom, I think we have to sort of differentiate it between wisdom and knowledge.

    03:08-03:12

    Knowledge is just knowing facts.

    03:12-03:14

    Knowledge is knowing things.

    03:15-03:19

Wisdom is knowing how to apply knowledge.

    03:20-03:24

And specifically, we're talking about godly wisdom.

    03:25-03:37

Godly wisdom is knowing how to apply the Word of God to everyday living, everyday scenarios, the things that I face in my home, in my workplace.

    03:38-03:42

It's how do I take the knowledge in here and apply it?

    03:43-03:43

    That's wisdom.

    03:46-04:00

The Bible speaks of applying knowledge in areas such as money, such as the way you use your mouth, marriage, the workplace, the marketplace, witnessing, forgiveness, how I spend my time, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

    04:01-04:05

The Bible speaks to all matters of living life.

    04:06-04:11

And wisdom is knowing how to apply the principles that God's laid out for us in here.

    04:13-04:18

So in your outline today, if you're taking notes, I want you to jot a couple of things down, wise up about wisdom.

    04:20-04:24

In 1 Kings 3, the first point we need to get down is this.

    04:26-04:28

You have to know you need it.

    04:29-04:31

You have to know you need it.

    04:33-04:35

We'll pick up in verse 5 here.

    04:36-04:40

It says, "A Gibeon, the Lord, appeared to Solomon in a dream by night.

    04:40-04:49

And God said," here it is, "Ask what I shall give you." like blank check, Solomon, sign it, what do you want?

    04:50-05:01

And Solomon said, "You have shown great and steadfast love "to your servant David, my father, "because he walked before you in faithfulness "and righteousness and in uprightness of heart toward you.

    05:01-05:07

"And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love "and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day.

    05:08-05:13

"And now, O Lord, my God, you have made your servant king "in place of David, my father.

    05:14-05:20

"Although I am but a little child, I do not know how to go out or come in.

    05:21-05:25

So the first thing you need to know about wisdom is you have to know you need it.

    05:26-05:29

Right? And it starts with humility.

    05:29-05:31

That's what we see from Solomon, it's humility.

    05:33-05:41

As far as wisdom goes, if you don't think you need it, or if you think you just naturally have it, then you're never going to get it.

    05:43-05:46

Okay, letter B, wise up about wisdom.

    05:47-05:50

Not only do you have to know you need it, you have to know where to get it.

    05:52-05:53

So I jumped on to verse nine.

    05:55-05:58

Solomon says, and here's what he asked for.

    05:58-06:16

God says, "Hey, ask what I shall give you." In verse nine, "Give your servant therefore "an understanding mind to govern your people "that I may discern between good and evil "for who is able to govern this, your great people." So note two things about that.

    06:16-06:18

First of all, it was a selfless request.

    06:20-06:24

I imagine for most of us, if God showed up and said, "I'll give you whatever you want," we'd be thinking, "What do I want?

    06:24-06:25

    What do I want?

    06:25-06:33

What do I want?" Solomon was thinking, "What could God give me that will serve people?" That's humility, right?

    06:33-06:34

    It's a selfless request.

    06:36-06:44

But the thing I really want you to note here is Solomon knew that the wisdom that he needed to govern the people, Solomon knew that could only come from God.

    06:46-06:49

That's not going to come from a seminar.

    06:49-06:53

That's not going to come from a DVD set.

    06:54-07:01

He said, "God, only you can give me the wisdom that I need." You have to get that down.

    07:01-07:05

James 1.5 says this, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him," what?

    07:07-07:09

    "Ask God." I love this.

    07:09-07:14

who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." What a promise.

    07:15-07:18

When you get to that point, you're like, well, I know I need it, and I know God gives it.

    07:19-07:28

James says, "If you go to God after it, He has promised to give it to you." There's nobody that has ever gone to God with sincerity, saying, "God, I need wisdom," and God's turned them away.

    07:29-07:30

James makes that point so clear.

    07:30-07:33

Gives to all without reproach, and it will be given.

    07:33-07:34

    It will be given.

    07:36-07:37

    It only comes from God.

    07:37-07:39

Somebody would say, "Wait a second, Pastor Jeff.

    07:40-07:41

Don't we have God's Word already?

    07:41-07:48

I mean, didn't God already give us His Word?" So, yeah, He did.

    07:50-07:55

But understand that you need God's enablement to be able to apply the knowledge that's in here.

    07:55-07:58

    This is full of knowledge.

    07:58-08:09

This is full of eternal truths, but you can't wisely apply this unless God enables you to do that.

    08:11-08:16

The Word won't work without the Holy Spirit empowering you to do it.

    08:18-08:20

See, every week we talk about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

    08:21-08:22

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is everything.

    08:23-08:27

That Christ died for your sins, He rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    08:27-08:35

And part of that promise, the Bible says when you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God's Holy Spirit indwells you.

    08:35-08:38

And that's one of the things that God does in your life.

    08:38-08:45

His Holy Spirit works with His Word to let wisdom play out in your life.

    08:47-08:49

But you have to know where to get it.

    08:49-08:50

    It only comes from God.

    08:51-08:52

    Let her see.

    08:53-08:53

Okay, you have to know you need it.

    08:54-08:55

You have to know where to get it.

    08:55-08:57

Let her see you have to apply it.

    08:59-09:13

And immediately, in this account, God's Word takes us to THE story given to us to demonstrate the wisdom that Solomon asked for in action.

    09:13-09:14

    Right?

    09:16-09:18

So let's look at verses 16-28.

    09:19-09:24

It says, "Then two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him.

    09:26-09:33

The one woman said, "Oh my Lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house.

    09:35-09:40

On the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth, and we were alone.

    09:40-09:44

There was no one else with us in the house.

    09:44-09:57

Only we two were in the house." Okay, so this lady's like, "Rumi and I, we each had a baby three days apart, right?" Verse 19, "And this woman's son died in the night because she lay on him.

    09:59-10:08

She arose at midnight and took my son from beside me while your servant slept, and laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast.

    10:10-10:14

When I arose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead.

    10:16-10:21

But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had born.

    10:22-10:46

So do you see what happened? Horrible, horrible accident. One woman accidentally rolled over and smothered her baby. I'm sure it was freak out panic attack and she's swapped her baby out with the other one. And that mother didn't notice until morning when it would have been light and moms know their babies right?

    10:46-11:03

She would have looked at this baby like wait wait wait wait wait this this isn't "This isn't my son." But the other woman said, "No, the living child is mine and the dead child is yours." And the first said, "No, the dead child is yours and the living child is mine." Thus they spoke before the king.

    11:05-11:11

Then the king said, "The one says, this is my son that is alive and your son is dead.

    11:11-11:25

And the other says, no, but your son is dead and my son is the living one." And the king, Solomon, the king said, "Bring me a sword." So a sword was brought before the king.

    11:25-11:38

The king said, "Divide the living child in two and give half to the one and half to the other." You think the leader of this country says some shocking things.

    11:40-12:16

Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, "Because her heart yearned for her son, "Oh my Lord, give her the living child and by no means put him to death." But the other said, "He shall be neither mine nor yours, divide him." Then the king answered and said, "Give the living child to the first woman and by no means put him to death, she is his mother." And all Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered and they stood in awe of the king because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice.

    12:18-12:23

Solomon here was in a position to judge an impossible to judge scenario.

    12:24-12:25

    Like why is it impossible?

    12:25-12:28

Well, the first reason is there were no witnesses, right?

    12:28-12:28

    There were no witnesses.

    12:29-12:31

It's usually the first thing that happens in court proceedings.

    12:31-12:31

    Where are the witnesses?

    12:33-12:35

We saw very clearly in verse 18 there were not any.

    12:36-12:41

Another reason it was hard to judge is because it was just one person's word against another, right?

    12:42-12:48

show up saying the exact same thing. Yeah, mine is the living child, hers is the dead one. And they're both just going back and forth with that.

    12:50-13:07

And the third reason it's impossible is, you know, the one woman said, "At midnight while I was sleeping, she did this." You don't know what's happening when you're sleeping. How did you know what time it was? Is that called conjecture? Is that what that's called? Okay.

    13:08-13:10

So Solomon here didn't really have much to go on.

    13:13-13:18

What you need to see from the story, what God's showing us from this story, is that Solomon used wisdom.

    13:21-13:25

He actually used principles that he later wrote down in the book of Proverbs.

    13:25-13:29

He used principles from the word of God to settle it.

    13:30-13:32

Like, well, what Proverbs did he use?

    13:32-13:35

Here's just a few off the top of my head that I jotted down.

    13:37-13:38

    Wisdom that Solomon used.

    13:38-13:48

Proverbs 18.17 says, "The one who states his case first seems right until the other comes and examines him." Do you notice Solomon heard both sides of the story?

    13:48-13:49

He didn't just hear the first lady.

    13:49-13:52

He's like, "Well, obviously I know what's going." He heard both sides.

    13:53-13:53

    That's wisdom.

    13:54-14:04

Proverbs 18.13 says, "If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame." We saw in verse 23, Solomon heard them out and Solomon did something very wise.

    14:04-14:05

    He recapped the story.

    14:05-14:25

In verse 23, he's like, "If I'm understanding you right, here's what's happening." Proverbs 12, 13 says, "An evil man is ensnared by the transgression of his lips, but the righteous escapes from trouble." You see, liar mom got caught because of her mouth, didn't she?

    14:26-14:40

That's how Solomon was able to recognize, not only because the real mother Said, "No, give the baby to her." But liar mom got ensnared by the transgression of her lips.

    14:41-14:47

So Solomon wisely knew the real mother wouldn't let the baby die.

    14:48-14:53

She was willing to give the baby up and be reckoned a liar if it meant saving the baby.

    14:56-15:05

So she thought giving up a child is a great option from being killed.

    15:07-15:11

Giving up a child is a great option if it saves the baby from getting killed.

    15:12-15:17

That sounds like another sermon, but true nonetheless.

    15:19-15:23

Solomon knew if one went for the cut the baby in half deal, she had to be lying.

    15:25-15:26

    That's a great story.

    15:28-15:31

    Like, well, what about me?

    15:32-15:32

    Right, like what about me?

    15:33-15:46

because it's, Pastor Jeff, that is a great story, but honestly, it's very unlikely that you are going to have to arbitrate between two prostitutes fighting over a babe.

    15:46-15:47

    That is very unlikely.

    15:48-15:50

If that happens to you this week, I want you to call me.

    15:51-15:53

And I want to hear how that works out.

    15:54-15:57

But it's not a likely scenario that you're going to face.

    15:58-16:02

You say, I can't leave you with, you know, walking out the door after the closing worship.

    16:02-16:48

I can't have you walking out the door going, "Okay, now I know what to do if two prostitutes are fighting over a baby." But you will. You will face scenarios in your life that you're not going to exactly be able to point to a phrase or a verse in the Bible to say, "Here's the answer. I found it right here in black and white. You're going to face things in your own life that we're going to call today for the sake of putting a label on it, we're going to call them gray areas. Gray areas are areas in your life where there's no clear, the Bible very specifically addresses this.

    16:48-17:01

Now we're talking about gray areas, areas that are more questionable, right? Or things Things that are more like matter of preference or conviction.

    17:02-17:04

We're talking about gray areas, okay?

    17:04-17:11

We're not talking about things like, "Okay, should I steal?" No, the Bible's clear on that, right?

    17:11-17:17

Or, "Is it okay for me to murder my boss?" No, the Bible is very clear about that.

    17:17-17:22

We're talking about areas that, like I said, they don't have a book, chapter, and verse.

    17:23-17:34

We're talking about things like, "Is it okay for me to drink alcohol as a Christian?" Now we know the Bible says don't get drunk, and the Bible gives warning, but is there a...

    17:34-17:46

Can you take me to a book chapter and verse, Pastor Jeff, that says, "Thou shall not have a beer after you mow the lawn." There's not a verse like that.

    17:47-17:51

Or somebody says, "You know, I smoke cigarettes.

    17:51-18:06

Is that wrong?" There is not one verse in the Bible that says, "Smoke them if you got them." Or "Thou shalt not smoke them, whether or not thine have them." It doesn't say that.

    18:09-18:11

Is it okay for me to listen to secular music?

    18:14-18:20

You know, the Bible doesn't like address the Dave Matthews band, I'm still looking.

    18:22-18:23

    But I'm pretty sure that's a no.

    18:25-18:29

Sorry, that was for one person that I know is a really big fan.

    18:30-18:33

Who's also in the family and Thanksgiving's gonna be awkward, but anyways.

    18:34-18:34

    (congregation laughing)

    18:36-18:41

But the Bible doesn't specifically say that stuff, you know what I mean?

    18:41-18:43

And people ask me that all the time as a pastor.

    18:43-18:45

They ask me, "Is it okay?

    18:45-18:50

Or what does the Bible say about, or what do you think I should do about?" So what do you do?

    18:50-18:56

The question that I want us to look at today is how do you take principles from God's word in order to make the best choices?

    18:56-18:58

All right, some things are, it's black and white, right?

    18:58-19:00

God says, "This is right, this is wrong.

    19:00-19:06

You should always do this, you should never do this." Sometimes that's just not in the Bible.

    19:07-19:13

And we're like, "Look, how can I make the best choice for me, for my family.

    19:14-19:19

Well, today I want to teach you something that was taught to me a long time ago, that this is something that I still use to this day.

    19:20-19:26

It's a very simple, but a very effective way to apply wisdom from the Word of God.

    19:26-19:29

    It's called the 1 Corinthians 6.8.10 principle.

    19:29-19:30

    All right?

    19:30-19:36

Five principles for making wise decisions in what we're calling gray areas.

    19:37-19:38

    All right?

    19:40-19:47

Now these all come, I'm gonna have the verses on the screen for you today so we're not all flipping around and so we're not distracted.

    19:47-19:51

But I'd encourage you, we have great people, like make sure these sermons are online.

    19:51-19:59

You can listen to this again, follow along with your Bible, but you can certainly follow along now if you're a fast flipper.

    19:59-20:09

But I want you to get these principles down because this is something that you can use in every arena of life, ultra applicable, all right?

    20:09-20:22

So 1 Corinthians, just to give you a little bit of an on-ramp here, the scenario that they were facing was in the marketplace, they would sell meat that was sacrificed to an idol.

    20:23-20:25

And you can imagine how the church responded to that.

    20:25-20:26

    There were two camps.

    20:26-20:30

There was one camp that was like, you should never touch that.

    20:31-20:33

They were using that in pagan worship, man.

    20:33-20:39

I can't believe you're eating something that was just sacrificed to a pagan God.

    20:39-20:40

    You can't touch that.

    20:40-20:42

The church should have nothing to do with that.

    20:43-20:50

And then you had this other camp that was like, look, a hamburger is just a hamburger.

    20:51-20:53

It don't matter where the cow went to church.

    20:55-20:57

You put it between buns, it tastes the same.

    20:57-20:59

The boogeyman doesn't live in the hamburger.

    21:00-21:01

So you had these two camps.

    21:01-21:06

You can understand like the Corinthian church, you know, they had a lot of unity issues.

    21:07-21:09

So the issue was, what do I do?

    21:11-21:11

    What do I do?

    21:12-21:18

What do I do when I need to make a decision like that in a, "No, thus saith the Lord, it's a gray area." Well, here's what you do.

    21:19-21:23

Okay, you're going to ask yourself five questions and they're drawn from principles in 1 Corinthians.

    21:23-21:24

    And here's how this works.

    21:25-21:32

With these five questions, if you can answer yes to all five questions, then green light, go for it.

    21:33-21:35

Hit the accelerator, go for it.

    21:37-21:51

But here's where as a pastor I want to say, if you answer no to any of these, or even if you answer, I'm not really sure, I would strongly urge you to pump the brakes.

    21:53-21:58

Really slow down and really examine to say, is this a wise decision?

    22:00-22:01

If you say no to any of these.

    22:01-22:01

    Okay, so you got it?

    22:01-22:04

You're gonna ask yourself these five questions when you face a gray area.

    22:04-22:06

    All yeses? Fantastic.

    22:07-22:08

    No? Stop.

    22:08-22:10

    Eh, maybe, eh...

    22:11-22:12

Really pumped them brakes hard, alright?

    22:13-22:14

    So here's the five questions.

    22:15-22:17

Question number one, is it permissible?

    22:17-22:22

This comes from 1 Corinthians, actually the first three come from 1 Corinthians 6.12.

    22:22-22:25

Can we get that on the wall here?

    22:26-22:35

Paul says, "All things are lawful for me." Which was more than likely a saying that was circulating in that culture.

    22:36-22:37

All things are lawful for me.

    22:37-22:42

So the first question we have to ask ourselves, is it permissible?

    22:42-22:44

    Is it lawful?

    22:46-22:49

This thing that I'm trying to evaluate, should I do it, should I not do it?

    22:49-22:51

First question, obviously, is does the Bible allow it?

    22:52-22:52

    That's the first question.

    22:52-22:57

But another question you have to ask yourself, is it legal according to our laws?

    22:58-23:03

We are called, Christians, we are called to submit to the government unless the government would call us to sin.

    23:05-23:09

And in that case, we appeal to the higher authority, which is God.

    23:09-23:16

But so long as the government isn't calling us to do something sinful, unbiblical, we submit to the government.

    23:17-23:22

So the first question you have to ask yourself when you're evaluating is, is it permissible?

    23:22-23:24

    Is it allowed by God?

    23:24-23:26

Is it allowed according to law?

    23:27-23:28

    Ask yourself that question.

    23:28-24:00

Second question, I'm gonna go through these examples of how this works, right? Second question, same verse, "Is it beneficial?" So is it permissible? The second question is, "Is it beneficial?" Look at the next part of the verse. It says, "All things are lawful for me," look at this, "but not all things are helpful." So ask yourself, "Is it beneficial?" In other words, will this be good for me? Is there a possibility that this thing could be harmful to me in any way? Is this helpful to me in my body, in my mind, or in my spirit?

    24:00-24:03

So we ask ourselves, gray area, is it okay?

    24:03-24:04

    What should I do?

    24:04-24:05

    Is it permissible?

    24:05-24:05

    Is it beneficial?

    24:06-24:08

    Third question, same verse.

    24:09-24:11

Is it free from possible addiction?

    24:13-24:13

    Look at it again.

    24:13-24:15

Is it free from possible addiction?

    24:15-24:17

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.

    24:17-24:21

All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.

    24:22-24:29

Meaning I will not put myself in a position where I'm enslaved to anything.

    24:30-24:33

We are bond servants of Jesus Christ.

    24:34-24:35

    He is our master.

    24:36-24:39

I'm not going to be enslaved by anything else.

    24:40-24:43

The question is, is this thing free from getting me under its power?

    24:43-24:47

Is it free from the possibility of enslaving me?

    24:47-24:48

    Okay, fourth question.

    24:48-24:50

This comes from 1 Corinthians 6.12.

    24:50-24:54

Fourth question comes from 1 Corinthians 8.12 and 13.

    24:54-24:57

And the question is, is it free from causing a brother to stumble?

    24:59-25:01

Is it free from causing a brother to stumble?

    25:01-25:12

First Corinthians 8, 12, and 13 say, "Thus, sinning against your brother and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ." Wow.

    25:13-25:26

Look what Paul says, "Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble." See, Paul knew that there were people in that culture that came out of pagan idolatry worship.

    25:27-25:30

He's like, "It's going to be a major problem for them if they see me eating that meat.

    25:30-25:37

And if it's going to be a problem for them, I'll be a vegetarian." So you have to ask yourself, "How is this going to affect others?

    25:37-25:38

Is it going to lead them into trouble?

    25:39-25:41

What if somebody sees me doing this and they copy?

    25:41-25:46

Is it something I wouldn't want my kids or kids in the church see me doing and imitating?

    25:46-26:03

Is this free from being a stumbling block to others?" And then with this question, there's people that are like, "Who cares?" The athletes that are like, they get caught doing something wrong, and they're like, "I never said I was a role model!" That is such an immature attitude.

    26:03-26:04

    It's just, it's immature.

    26:07-26:18

There's nothing godly, there's nothing wise about that attitude of, "I don't care if people are watching, I don't care if it's a problem for other people that I do it." It's time to grow up in Christ, okay?

    26:19-26:20

It's time to grow up in Christ.

    26:21-26:24

Because your Christian walk isn't just about you.

    26:24-26:26

In the community, it affects other people.

    26:28-26:30

We already said back in the beginning, right?

    26:30-26:32

    Wisdom starts with humility.

    26:32-26:36

Putting other people ahead of yourself, this is an act of humility.

    26:36-26:39

I'm not going to do something that's going to hurt somebody else.

    26:40-26:41

It's going to trouble somebody else.

    26:42-26:44

    It is not worth it.

    26:46-26:46

    Is it permissible?

    26:46-26:47

    Is it beneficial?

    26:48-27:23

possible addiction? Is it free from causing a brother to stumble? The last question, this comes from 1st Corinthians 10 31, is it glorifying to God? Is it glorifying to God? That comes from 1st Corinthians 10 31 where Paul says, "Therefore whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." This thing that you're thinking about, should I do it? Am I allowed to do it? Is to do this to the glory of God. That's the 1 Corinthians 6.8.10 principle.

    27:26-27:37

Let's try it out. What do you think? My first example that I jotted down actually came from a real life example. In prison ministry one time, there was a guy that came very sincerely.

    27:39-27:44

I don't know if he ever fully received the Lord or if he... I know he was really seeking.

    27:45-27:45

    I know that.

    27:46-27:54

And in all sincerity one time he said, he's like, "Pastor Jeff, is it okay for me to smoke?" I wanna know what God says about that.

    27:54-27:57

And I said, "Look, I'm not the judge.

    27:58-28:05

"You gotta live according to your convictions." But I said, "I have a little exercise we can do "to help you come to your own convictions on that." So let's examine that.

    28:06-28:07

    Is it okay to smoke?

    28:09-28:10

So the first question is, is it permissible?

    28:11-28:12

    Are you allowed?

    28:13-28:16

    Yeah, if you're over 18, it's legal.

    28:16-28:17

    Is it 18?

    28:18-28:18

    It's legal.

    28:19-28:20

    You're allowed.

    28:22-28:23

Okay, second question, is it beneficial?

    28:25-28:27

I kind of had the guy at that point.

    28:27-28:30

Like, I could just see him, he was like, okay, you answered my question.

    28:30-28:31

I'm like, no, we're gonna continue.

    28:33-28:34

But it's not, look, it's not beneficial.

    28:35-28:35

    It's not.

    28:37-28:40

Nobody's ever gone to the doctor and been prescribed two packs a day or anything.

    28:41-28:42

    It's not beneficial.

    28:42-28:43

    It's just not.

    28:44-29:15

And how about number three, is it free from possible addiction? What's the answer to that? It's terribly addictive. Number four, is it free from causing a brother to stumble? I looked at it and I was like, "Eh." I don't know if anybody's really like my walk got really derailed because I saw somebody smoking a cigarette. That to me is just kind of like, "Eh." Not a hard no for me on that. That's just me. Maybe like hard no, okay, that's great.

    29:17-29:19

The last question is, is it glorifying to God?

    29:20-29:31

So you see how taking that scenario through the questions helps you to really examine, okay, now I feel a little better equipped on if this is something that I should be doing.

    29:31-29:32

    How about this one?

    29:34-29:38

Another question, is it okay to look at stuff on the computer that I shouldn't look at?

    29:40-29:42

    Because people love loopholes, right?

    29:42-29:46

The Bible doesn't explicitly say I shouldn't look at that stuff, right?

    29:47-29:49

Well, let's run it up the ladder here. Is it permissible?

    29:51-29:56

For me, I would argue a hard no, because the Bible is so clear.

    29:57-30:01

Warning against lust and setting no evil before our eyes.

    30:03-30:05

    Legal according to the laws?

    30:07-30:14

Okay, is it permissible? Someone would make an argument, Well, yeah, it's not illegal, even though I would say it's certainly unbiblical.

    30:16-30:18

But the second question is, is it beneficial?

    30:18-30:24

I've read so many articles of just the harm that comes from that in so many ways.

    30:24-30:29

The damage it does to our marriage relationships and future marriage relationships.

    30:30-30:31

    Is it beneficial?

    30:31-30:35

No, nobody's life has ever benefited from looking at stuff on the computer they shouldn't.

    30:36-30:38

How about number three, is it free from possible addiction?

    30:39-30:39

    What's the answer to that?

    30:42-30:42

    No.

    30:43-30:46

Number four, is it free from causing your brother to stumble?

    30:47-30:55

How would that work out if somebody else from your small group walked into the room while you were logged on your computer looking at this stuff? Would it cause a brother to stumble?

    30:57-31:00

It's certainly not free from that. I'd give that another hard no.

    31:00-31:03

Is it glorifying to God? Absolutely not.

    31:04-31:06

So you see how this works? I'm going to give you one more.

    31:08-31:10

Just in case there's somebody here that I didn't offend yet.

    31:12-31:15

This will surely do it for that one or two straggler.

    31:16-31:18

Is it okay for me to play the slot machines?

    31:21-31:21

Well, let's run it up the ladder.

    31:22-31:23

Is it okay for a Christian?

    31:23-31:25

I'm not, or maybe we're doing that.

    31:25-31:26

    I'm asking for a friend.

    31:28-31:29

Does your friend look like you?

    31:31-31:39

Is it okay for a Christian, Mr. Ambiguous Christian, is it okay for a Christian to play the slot machines running up the ladder.

    31:39-31:40

    Is it permissible?

    31:41-31:42

    Yeah, I guess it's legal.

    31:42-31:45

You can go to Rivers Casino and you can play, it's legal.

    31:46-31:47

Is there an age for that?

    31:47-31:49

Do you have to be over a certain age to be able to do that?

    31:50-31:54

I'm not, you know, don't imagine there's many like 12 year olds down there, like, what's the age?

    31:55-31:56

    21, okay.

    31:57-32:02

So, okay, so if you're over 21, I guess it's permissible.

    32:02-32:04

But the second question is, is it beneficial?

    32:06-32:06

    Is it beneficial?

    32:08-32:13

Like, you're like, yeah, it'll be beneficial when I win.

    32:16-32:17

Oh yeah, because that happens all the time.

    32:19-32:20

    Is it beneficial?

    32:22-32:24

Okay, I'm gonna, I'll give you an out.

    32:26-32:40

If you got Levy on Bell money at home, if you got so much money that you're like, you know what, I know I could make $853,000 by showing up and playing half of a game, but I'm gonna stay home.

    32:42-32:44

Even then, you know I'm kidding, right?

    32:44-32:45

Even then, like what's the benefit?

    32:45-32:46

    What's the benefit?

    32:47-32:49

Like if I win, I'll give it to the church.

    32:49-32:50

Oh, I hear that all the time.

    32:52-32:55

Like, all right, I'll have my wheelbarrow outside waiting for you to dump your money off.

    32:56-32:56

    (audience laughing)

    32:58-32:59

    (laughs)

    32:59-33:00

    It does not happen.

    33:02-33:03

    Okay, is it permissible?

    33:04-33:05

    Yeah, if you're over 21, I guess.

    33:05-33:05

    Is it beneficial?

    33:06-33:06

    I don't see it.

    33:07-33:08

How about, is it free from possible addiction?

    33:09-33:10

    How about that?

    33:12-33:14

That should be a big red flag, right?

    33:15-33:19

What do you see every gambling commercial, River's Casino or what's the one in West Virginia?

    33:21-33:23

Oh, do you see the people who answered quick?

    33:23-33:24

    That was a test.

    33:26-33:26

    I'm kidding.

    33:26-33:32

But every time there's a commercial for those things, because we've all seen the commercials, all right?

    33:33-33:36

What do they have the little thing at the bottom of the commercial?

    33:37-33:39

    The gambling helpline.

    33:39-33:48

How bad is your product or service if every time you advertise it, you also have to advertise help if you use this service, right?

    33:51-33:59

It'd be like if Burger King was airing commercials and then they had a little blurb like, you know, have a problem with overeating?

    33:59-34:01

You know, call Curves or whatever.

    34:02-34:03

    (Laughter)

    34:06-34:08

So is it free from possible addiction?

    34:08-34:13

I don't see that, but I have seen people destroy their lives with it.

    34:15-34:16

    So that's a hard no.

    34:16-34:18

Is it free from causing a brother to stumble?

    34:19-34:20

    I would say no.

    34:21-34:31

I would think it would cause a lot of especially immature Christians in the church to really stumble if they knew that you were going down and that's where you're spending your free time.

    34:33-34:35

    Is it glorifying to God?

    34:36-34:37

To me, that would be a hard no.

    34:37-34:39

    It's not glorifying to God.

    34:40-34:42

You know, because it's God's money, right?

    34:43-34:45

Is that what God wants you doing with his money?

    34:46-34:47

    No, it's not.

    34:48-34:49

You can apply this to anything.

    34:51-34:53

Is it okay for me to wear jeans to church?

    34:54-34:56

Is it okay for me to go tell my boss off?

    34:56-34:58

Is it okay for me to watch an R-rated movie?

    34:58-35:00

whatever, you can apply it to anything.

    35:02-35:08

Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you honestly on the choice that you believe is going to honor God.

    35:10-35:13

This is the part of the sermon where I close with a sales pitch.

    35:15-35:18

We're like, here's why you should really go after wisdom.

    35:20-35:30

But when you consider how wisdom benefits you, blesses others, and glorifies God, My question is, why wouldn't you go after that?

    35:32-35:32

    Right?

    35:32-35:40

It's no wonder Solomon said this, "Wisdom is better than jewels.

    35:41-35:48

And all that you may desire cannot compare with her." Let's pray.

    35:49-35:55

Father in heaven, we are so much like Solomon in that we need wisdom.

    35:57-36:00

Yes, Father, this is an amazing account.

    36:01-36:03

It's one of the most well-known accounts from the whole Bible.

    36:06-36:14

But Father, You have maybe not put us in that situation, but You put us in situations like Solomon that just look impossible on the surface.

    36:14-36:20

You've put us in situations where we're just not sure what to do sometimes.

    36:20-36:23

And Father, I thank You for the principles that You've given us in Your Word.

    36:23-36:31

I thank You for our brothers and sisters in Christ in our small groups that can help encourage and give biblical counsel and pray for us.

    36:31-36:36

Father, we thank You that You have not left us without resources.

    36:38-36:39

    Your Holy Spirit.

    36:41-36:42

    Your Word.

    36:43-36:45

    Father, they are our resources.

    36:48-36:49

    Father, help us.

    36:50-36:54

We know that a lot of these decisions we make aren't matters of salvation.

    36:54-37:06

They aren't matters of heaven or hell, but they're matters of, "I just want to make the best choice. I want to make the most God-honoring choice." Father, give us the wisdom to know it and to do it.

    37:07-37:09

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion

WHOLE GROUP
Read 1 Kings 3:7, 9, 16-28 (or just read the whole chapter if you want!)

  1. Define wisdom. How is it different than knowledge? Where does wisdom come from?

  2. Review the 1 Cor 6-8-10 Principle. What are the 5 questions to ask when seeking wisdom for a decision in a "grey area"?

  3. Come up with "grey area" scenarios, and as a group, evaluate the scenario using the 1 Cor 6-8-10 Principle.

BREAKOUT
