  • Pastor Jeff:

    00:42-00:45

This morning as Dan Thompson. Dan, would you make your way up here?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:45-00:47

    Don't welcome him yet, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:48-00:49

We're all going to do that at the same time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:50-01:13

But Dan and Alicia have been part of this church since before day one, and they serve faithfully in Arrow, which is our student ministry. They are youth group leaders. You work in the AV ministry, Alicia in the prayer ministry, and is there anything around here you guys are not involved in? And, you know, there church over the last couple of years, haven't there, Dan?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:13-01:13

    Oh yeah,

    Dan:

    01:14-01:14

    absolutely.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:14-01:22

And, you know, I was walking down memory lane looking at what the Lord's been doing in our church here, especially these last few weeks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:22-01:30

I remember when we were meeting at the chiropractor's office, and you remember we had enough money to buy the trailer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:30-01:34

And all we owned as a church, and some of you remember this, all we owned as a church was the trailer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:34-02:29

We didn't have anything to put in it, but we had, it was like $1,200 or something for this trailer because we were doing the church in the box thing at the middle school and we had a trailer. That was it. We're meeting at the chiropractor's office. They were so gracious to let us meet there. And you remember that day, Dan, that they pulled the trailer in. We're all standing in the parking lot, huddled around this empty trailer, and we were like, "Thank you, God, for this empty trailer!" And we were just so thankful, rightfully so. Absolutely. So thankful because we knew that God was going to fill it. And a lot has has changed in our church over the last couple of years, but one thing that hasn't changed and one thing that will never change is our commitment to the Word of God, which is why I couldn't think of a better guy to kick off this exciting new chapter in the Life of Harvest Bible Chapel. So I would say get your Bibles and get ready to let God change you. Now, give a warm welcome to Dan Thompson.

    Dan:

    02:30-03:31

Thank you, Pastor Jeff. I do want to express my thanks to Pastor Jeff and the elders for asking me to preach again, and especially for being the one to kick us off in this new space. It is a huge privilege. And it's pretty amazing, as Pastor Jeff just outlined, what God has done in such a short period of time. But I have to be honest, I've been pretty nervous leading up to this, but not for the reasons you might think. Because I'm speaking up here, I am totally useless to the AV team in the back, which is kind of a little bit scary for me as the person who's been involved with AV for such a long period in time, on Sunday to be back. But even still, it is truly a great honor to be here with you today. I'm so glad to be part of this church that God is so clearly moving in and that God is moving in and through us. And so let's look at the Word together, but let me open us with a word of prayer. Father God, I pray Lord that your words would be heard today. That you would remove the distractions. The distractions in this room, the distractions in our mind, God.

    Dan:

    03:31-03:50

the distractions in our heart, God, that prevent us from hearing. I pray that you would use this time to cause us to trust you more and to obey your word. Thank you for this time. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. So whether we were willing to admit it or not, everybody loves infomercials.

    Dan:

    03:50-05:42

You have the super convenient products like the Snuggie or the George Foreman Grill or OxiClean or Ronco Showtime rotisserie, set it and forget it. Right, that's right. Then there's the merchandise that can actually change your life from Proactiv to P90X, from the Clapper to the Bowflex, not available in stores. And my personal favorite are the absolutely absurd things like the Chia Pet or the ShamWow or the ever popular Shake Weight, each one with a money back guarantee. And on all those, you probably will need to use that money back guarantee. So why is it that we get sucked into these quagmires of marketing on those late nights? What is it about them that renders us paralyzed to change the channel on lazy Saturday mornings? Well, there's definitely a science behind all of it. But for the purposes of our time today, I am proposing that at least one of the reasons that infomercials work is that they promise immediate results and insist that you must act now. Deep down inside of us, each one of us is looking for a call to action. The call to action that I am raising for us today is that we should seek to obey God as often and as quickly as we can. I titled this sermon "Don't Delay, Act Now" and to demonstrate just a few reasons that we should strive for prompt obedience, we are going to look at 2 Kings 7. So open your Bibles with me to 2 Kings 7. And since that's a weird passage, I've got to probably give you a little bit of background on that. I figured in my other times preaching in the church. I preached on Romans 5, pretty basic, Genesis 3, all relatively understandable passages. This one's a little bit weirder. But the books of 1st and 2nd Kings are history books. They describe a time when God's people had kings. They begin with the end of David's reign, detail all of Solomon's reign, and then cover when the kingdom split in two.

    Dan:

    05:43-05:54

The northern kingdom was Israel, which eventually became the Samaritans, and the southern kingdom was Judah. And 2 Kings, that book ends after both kingdoms have gone into exile of their enemies.

    Dan:

    05:54-06:02

And not surprising from the name, these books focus on the kings of those two nations, most of whom are described as having done evil in the sight of the Lord.

    Dan:

    06:03-06:14

Our text picks up around 850 years before Christ, and we are in the reigns of Jehoram in the northern kingdom, Israel, and conveniently, a different Jehoram, in the south, in Judah.

    Dan:

    06:14-06:24

Well, these homonym kings may not ring any bells for most of us, but it may help to know that the northern Jehoram was the son of the infamous King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.

    Dan:

    06:24-06:30

We know a lot about these two wicked monarchs because of their interaction with God's mighty prophet, Elijah.

    Dan:

    06:30-06:40

In addition to miracles, Elijah brought the typical message of repentance to the northern kingdom of Israel, and he was hated by Ahab and Jezebel for it.

    Dan:

    06:40-06:55

But by the time our story starts, Ahab has been killed in battle by a random arrow, Elijah has already been charioted up into heaven, and Jezebel was anxiously awaiting the fulfillment of the prophecy that she would be eaten by dogs because of her evil decision making.

    Dan:

    06:55-06:59

So Elisha, with an "sh", is now the prophet on the scene.

    Dan:

    06:59-07:02

He was the protege of Elijah with a "j".

    Dan:

    07:02-07:06

Before his mentor ascended on high, he asked for a double portion of miracles.

    Dan:

    07:07-07:08

and eventually he gets exactly that.

    Dan:

    07:08-07:11

Twice as many miracles as Elijah, which is saying something.

    Dan:

    07:12-07:19

We pick up in chapter seven with Elisha and Jehoram, the northern king, in Samaria, which is the capital city of Israel.

    Dan:

    07:20-07:22

And it was literally under siege by the Syrians.

    Dan:

    07:23-07:27

As a result of the siege, this city is in the midst of a great famine.

    Dan:

    07:27-07:33

It was actually so bad that for food, the going rate for a head of a donkey, mm, appetizing, right?

    Dan:

    07:34-08:02

The going rate for a head of a donkey two pounds of silver. You just carry that in your back pocket, right? So that's a pretty terrible situation. And like his predecessor, Elisha wasn't typically winning friends or influencing people. In the previous chapter, the king actually cursed himself saying that he would be eaten for food if he didn't kill Elisha that day. Well, neither side of that promise actually happened. But all that is to say that by this point, when we pick up in our story, the people have given up hope of this siege ending. They just all think they're going to die.

    Dan:

    08:02-08:08

So with all that as introduction, let me ask Alexa to come and read this chapter for us because you're going to hear enough from me.

    Speaker 3:

    08:09-08:11

"Aleisha replied, 'Hear the word of the Lord.

    Speaker 3:

    08:11-08:12

This is what the Lord says.

    Speaker 3:

    08:12-08:35

About this time tomorrow, a say of the finest flower will sell for a shekel, and two say as of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.' The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, 'Look, even if the Lord should have opened the gates of the heavens, could this happen?' 'You will see it with your own eyes,' answered Aleisha, 'but you will not eat any of it.' Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate.

    Speaker 3:

    08:35-08:37

They said to each other, "Why stay here until we die?

    Speaker 3:

    08:38-08:41

If we say we'll go into the city, the famine is there, and we will die.

    Speaker 3:

    08:41-08:43

And if we stay here, we will die.

    Speaker 3:

    08:43-08:46

So let's go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender.

    Speaker 3:

    08:46-08:48

If they spare us, we will live.

    Speaker 3:

    08:48-08:52

If they kill us, then we will die." At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans.

    Speaker 3:

    08:53-09:01

When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, "Look!

    Speaker 3:

    09:02-09:05

The king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us.

    Speaker 3:

    09:05-09:10

So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys.

    Speaker 3:

    09:10-09:12

They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

    Speaker 3:

    09:13-09:17

The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank.

    Speaker 3:

    09:17-09:21

Then they took silver, gold, and clothes and went off and hid them.

    Speaker 3:

    09:21-09:25

Then they returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.

    Speaker 3:

    09:26-09:29

Then they said to each other, 'What we are doing is not right.

    Speaker 3:

    09:29-09:32

This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves.

    Speaker 3:

    09:32-09:35

If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us.

    Speaker 3:

    09:35-09:41

Let's go at once and report this to the royal palace." So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them.

    Speaker 3:

    09:41-09:49

We went into the Aramean camp and no one was there, not a sound of anyone, only tethered horses and donkeys and the tents left just as they were.

    Speaker 3:

    09:49-09:52

The gatekeepers shouted the news and it was reported within the palace.

    Speaker 3:

    09:52-09:57

The king got up in the night and said to his officers, "I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us.

    Speaker 3:

    09:58-10:05

They know we are starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the countryside, thinking, they will surely come out, and then we will take them alive and get into the city.

    Speaker 3:

    10:06-10:10

One of the officers answered, 'Make some men take five of the horses that are left in the city.

    Speaker 3:

    10:10-10:14

Their plight will be like that of all the Israelites left here.

    Speaker 3:

    10:15-10:18

Yes, they will only be like all these Israelites who are doomed.

    Speaker 3:

    10:19-10:25

So let us send them to find out what happened.' So they selected two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army.

    Speaker 3:

    10:26-10:36

He commanded the drivers, "Go and find out what had happened." They followed them as far as the Jordan, and they found the whole road strewn with the clothing and equipment the Arameans had thrown away in their headlong flight.

    Speaker 3:

    10:37-10:39

So the messengers returned and reported to the king.

    Speaker 3:

    10:39-10:42

Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans.

    Speaker 3:

    10:43-10:48

So a say of the finest flowers sold for a shekel, and the two say of barley sold for the shekel, as the Lord had said.

    Speaker 3:

    10:49-10:59

Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the The people trampled him in the gateway, and he died just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house.

    Speaker 3:

    11:00-11:23

It happened as the man of God had said to the king, 'About this time tomorrow, a say of the finest flower will sell for a shekel, and two sayers of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.' The officer had said to the man of God, 'Even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?' The man of God had replied, 'You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it.' And this is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, Thanks,

    Dan:

    11:23-11:38

Alexa. That's a mouthful, right? That's one of those passages that you're like, "Did I ever read that before?" And with history, it's sometimes difficult to figure out, "Why did God record this?" But this passage does have examples of things that we should do and some things that we shouldn't do.

    Dan:

    11:38-11:45

The text begins with a promise. If we look back at verse 1, now she read from the NIV, I'll read from the ESV, so there will be some differences.

    Dan:

    11:45-11:54

But Elisha said, "Hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord, 'Tomorrow about this time, a sea of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel.'" And he goes on.

    Dan:

    11:55-12:11

So since we're not experts in ancient currency, Elisha actually prophesied that there was going to be food available at a discounted price, right? Food so abundant that it actually could be sold cheaper than it normally would be. We just talked about how bad the famine was, right?

    Dan:

    12:11-12:15

So Elisha actually was prophesying that the famine was going to be over by tomorrow.

    Dan:

    12:16-12:21

Not only that the siege would be lifted, but that food would be so abundant, as I said, that it would be sold at a discounted price.

    Dan:

    12:21-12:24

This is not the way a siege typically ends, right?

    Dan:

    12:25-12:45

If the enemy should decide that they're done with the siege, right, they would leave, and then you would go out, you'd restore the fields, wait for the crops to grow, and eventually you'd have food again, but nothing was going to happen by tomorrow, let alone discounted flour. So what Elisha is promising here is a miracle from God.

    Dan:

    12:46-13:04

So it's not surprising then in verse 2 when we see some doubt from the king's advisor, that guy who's referred to as the captain on whom whose hand the king leaned. But we'll get back to him later. Here's where we get our first reason to act now. What's the worst that can happen? We pick up with the main characters of our story here. Look in verses 3 and 4 again.

    Dan:

    13:04-13:08

Now, there were four men who were lepers at the entrance to the gate.

    Dan:

    13:08-13:11

They said to one another, "Why are we sitting here till we die?

    Dan:

    13:11-13:17

If we say, 'Let us enter the city,' the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. If we sit here, we'll die here.

    Dan:

    13:18-13:20

So now let us go over to the camp of the Syrians or the Arameans.

    Dan:

    13:21-13:28

If they spare our lives, we shall live. If they kill us, we shall but die." These guys are in one of those moments of true clarity.

    Dan:

    13:29-13:35

Given their choices, the only real option that isn't guaranteed death is going and asking their enemies for help.

    Dan:

    13:36-13:43

Now, devoid of the context of their situation, asking your besieging enemies to give you some food doesn't sound like all that great of an idea.

    Dan:

    13:43-13:53

But when they assess the situation fully, they realize that in crossing enemy lines, the worst thing that can happen to them, well, they're gonna die, which is going to happen to them if they do nothing.

    Dan:

    13:54-13:55

And the best case scenario is that they live.

    Dan:

    13:56-14:00

That makes it a really easy choice to do something that on the surface sounds really hard.

    Dan:

    14:01-14:02

Well, how's this related to obedience?

    Dan:

    14:02-14:04

    First, what is obedience?

    Dan:

    14:04-14:07

Well, obedience is a willingness to submit to the authority of God.

    Dan:

    14:08-14:15

And sometimes, maybe even a lot of times, when God asks us to do something or to not do something, it doesn't sound like all that great of an idea.

    Dan:

    14:16-14:21

But these lepers remind us that if you assess the totality of what's going on, the choice becomes a lot easier to make.

    Dan:

    14:21-14:22

We all struggle with obeying God.

    Dan:

    14:23-14:26

I get that, because God asks us to do some pretty hard things.

    Dan:

    14:26-14:29

He commands us to admit that we are sinners in desperate need of a Savior.

    Dan:

    14:30-14:32

What an attack on my pride and my self-reliance.

    Dan:

    14:32-14:35

He desires that we put others first and die to ourselves.

    Dan:

    14:36-14:37

What about me and my needs?

    Dan:

    14:38-14:42

He calls us to live a life of purity in a totally impure and debaucherous world.

    Dan:

    14:43-14:44

Why can't I join in on all that fun?

    Dan:

    14:45-14:53

He wants us to be a bold light in an increasingly darkening domain and to speak out for what is right among those who love what is wrong.

    Dan:

    14:53-14:54

What will people think of me?

    Dan:

    14:54-14:56

And who am I to tell others that they're wrong?

    Dan:

    14:56-14:58

These are impossible asks of God.

    Dan:

    14:59-15:02

But look, in our broken world, we are sinners destined to die.

    Dan:

    15:03-15:04

If we do nothing, we will still die.

    Dan:

    15:05-15:06

If we live for ourselves, we still die.

    Dan:

    15:07-15:10

If we try to be good people without including God, we still die.

    Dan:

    15:10-15:15

So why are we resistant to obeying God, who offers so many promises of blessing, when we do obey Him?

    Dan:

    15:15-15:19

The worst thing that anyone can do to us is to cause us to die.

    Dan:

    15:19-15:22

And if we are believers in Christ, that sends us directly to heaven.

    Dan:

    15:22-15:23

    That's not even that bad.

    Dan:

    15:23-15:27

Matthew 10, 28 says, "And do not fear those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul.

    Dan:

    15:27-15:30

rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

    Dan:

    15:31-15:40

When considering whether to obey God or not, act now by asking yourself, "What's the worst that could happen?" But most of our decisions to obey God don't come down to life and death decisions, right?

    Dan:

    15:40-15:44

So we don't always have that logical clarity that these lepers have of life versus death.

    Dan:

    15:44-15:49

Most of our decisions are good versus bad or good versus best.

    Dan:

    15:49-15:54

For these, I think it helps to take any aspect of God's character and add it into the equation.

    Dan:

    15:54-15:55

    Start with his love.

    Dan:

    15:56-16:01

Romans says, I think we have it up there, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

    Dan:

    16:01-16:07

Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

    Dan:

    16:07-16:10

As it is written, for your sake, we are being killed all the day long.

    Dan:

    16:10-16:13

We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

    Dan:

    16:13-16:17

No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

    Dan:

    16:17-16:30

For I am sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present nor things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

    Dan:

    16:31-16:36

God's perfect, sacrificial, and protective love is certainly more than enough reason to trust Him.

    Dan:

    16:36-16:39

His commandments are for our benefit because He loves us.

    Dan:

    16:40-16:43

No one can stand against us when we obey Him because He loves us.

    Dan:

    16:43-16:44

    What about His wisdom?

    Dan:

    16:44-16:50

Proverbs says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." God literally created everything out of nothing in the universe.

    Dan:

    16:50-17:53

And you want to call into question His decision-making abilities as to whether He's capable of being trusted or not? And we could go on and on and look at his justice, his power, his mercy, his holiness. But it comes down to two options. Obey the sound of broken, sinful man, both deceptive and deceived, finite and powerless, or obey the voice of a perfect and holy creator of all things, both loving and lovable, infinite and all-powerful. The choice to act now and to do the hard things that God calls us to do becomes much easier when we consider what's the worst that can happen. In our story here in 2 Kings, that's what the lepers did. So they went to the camp of their enemies and this is where we find our second reason to act now. Good news must be shared. These lepers were greatly rewarded for their decision to act now. They went to seek help from the Syrians but they find that their enemies have actually left overnight and the Bible tells us why. In verse 6 it says, "They thought they heard the sound of armies and fled." But there were no actual armies out there. Kind of reminds me of the first half of Proverbs 28.1, the wicked flee when no one pursues, which we talked a lot about before.

    Dan:

    17:53-17:57

Our friends find that the enemies have left and they're cashing in on the spoils.

    Dan:

    17:57-18:01

But eventually they come to their senses and realize the second reason to act now.

    Dan:

    18:02-18:04

    Good news must be shared.

    Dan:

    18:04-18:05

    Look back at verse 9.

    Dan:

    18:06-18:07

They said to one another, "We are not doing right.

    Dan:

    18:08-18:10

This day is a day of good news.

    Dan:

    18:10-18:14

If we are silent and wait until morning, punishment will overtake us.

    Dan:

    18:14-18:30

Now therefore, let us go and tell the king's household." Proverbs 15.30 says, "Good news refreshes the bones." And in 25.25, it says, "Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country." Think about how good news works in your own life.

    Dan:

    18:31-18:33

When you get that promotion, what makes it sweeter?

    Dan:

    18:33-18:37

When your kid says that hilarious thing, how do you get the deepest laughs?

    Dan:

    18:37-18:40

When you get that good report back from the doctor, do you keep that to yourself?

    Dan:

    18:40-18:43

No, good news is better when it is shared.

    Dan:

    18:43-18:46

And when we are the bearers of that good news, then we're better off for it.

    Dan:

    18:47-18:57

for sharing it. We live in a world based upon the principle of sharing. Take breathing as an example. With every breath, we exhale carbon dioxide and we share that with the plants.

    Dan:

    18:57-19:02

And likewise, plants share oxygen with us in return. Well, you don't have to share.

    Dan:

    19:02-19:09

You could choose to put a bag over your head and selfishly keep all the carbon dioxide for yourself, but all you'd be doing is proving that the wages of sin is death.

    Dan:

    19:10-19:21

In all the ways that we are called to obey God, there is a theme that is prominent. God yourself and share with those in need. Go make disciples by sharing the good news.

    Dan:

    19:22-19:37

We need to understand that the reason that God blesses us is so that we can share with others, spiritually, physically, whatever blessings that we have received. So, act now in obeying God, because the good news must be shared. The lepers did this, and they sent a report back to the king.

    Dan:

    19:38-20:07

And the king's response is funny to me. Look at verse 12 again. "And the king arose in the night and said to his servants, 'I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know we are hungry and therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in open country thinking when they come out of the city we shall take them alive and get into the city." Remember, literally hours before, Elisha has promised that God is going to supernaturally end this siege, right? So when he actually sees, hears the good news, what's his response? Doubt.

    Dan:

    20:07-20:16

Complete conspiracy theory, in fact. It sounds crazy. He believes the whole thing is a trap, But thankfully, at least somebody's able to convince him that maybe we should check this thing out.

    Dan:

    20:16-20:21

And just like those infomercials, this sermon has an added bonus thrown in for free.

    Dan:

    20:21-20:24

I'll have an extra sub point. That is, doubt only wastes time.

    Dan:

    20:25-20:33

Instead of immediately rejoicing in the miracle that God provided, the king's doubt keeps the entire city locked up for a couple of hours.

    Dan:

    20:33-21:15

Those people are facing starvation. Like, being locked up for 10 minutes when you're hungry is torture. To be locked up for hours whenever you are starving is almost unbearable. So doubt really just wastes time and ultimately sometimes it can lead to disobedience. So here's three doubt signs that you're about to not obey. First doubt sign, you can't do the math. If we go back to verse 2, remember what the king's advisor said. He couldn't understand the promise of the siege ending and this abundance of food and how that was all going to add up. But remember, God is better at math than If you always need to understand the details of how God is going to work things out, then you're in danger of not obeying.

    Dan:

    21:15-21:18

Second doubt sign that you're about to not obey is you forget the past.

    Dan:

    21:18-21:24

The Jews had a history of God literally providing bread from heaven for them to sustain them for over 40 years.

    Dan:

    21:24-21:32

So in verse 2, when the king's advisor said that, "How could God do this even if he opened a window in heaven?" Did that whole manna thing escape him? He forgot all about that?

    Dan:

    21:32-21:40

As another example, as I just mentioned, the king heard Elijah's promise of the miracle only hours before, and yet when it's actually happening, he can't remember the past.

    Dan:

    21:41-21:43

So if you forget the past, then you're in danger of not obeying.

    Dan:

    21:44-21:48

And the last doubt sign that you're about to not obey is that you need to see it to believe it.

    Dan:

    21:48-21:51

The king was only able to open the city after he saw the proof.

    Dan:

    21:51-21:58

And I do acknowledge that there are times when we find ourselves needing confirmation from God about decisions that we need to make.

    Dan:

    21:59-22:01

But typically, obedience is not one of those things.

    Dan:

    22:02-22:09

If God said to do something or to not do something, then you don't need any further confirmation. You don't need to pray about that. Just do it.

    Dan:

    22:09-22:14

Just do what he says. So, if you need to see it to believe it, you are in danger of not obeying.

    Dan:

    22:15-22:50

All those points are to say is that don't delay, act now, obey God, and stop wasting everyone's time. This brings me to the final point. Trust God or miss the blessing. Let's look at verses 18 through 20 at the very end. "For when the man of God had said to the king," that's Elisha, "Two sieves of barley shall be sold for a shekel, and a sieve of fine flour for a shekel, about this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria." The captain had answered the man of God, "If the Lord himself should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?" And he had said, "You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it." And so it happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gate, and he died.

    Dan:

    22:51-22:58

The king's advisor refused to trust God, and not only did he not get to share in any of the blessing of the food, but he was actually trampled to death by his own people.

    Dan:

    22:58-23:06

As a much less gruesome example of this point, I recently, about a month ago, took Ellie and Evie, my older two daughters, to go ice skating for the first time.

    Dan:

    23:06-23:08

I figured that both of them would absolutely love it.

    Dan:

    23:08-23:10

They love to dance, they love hockey.

    Dan:

    23:11-23:14

How could this be wrong? This is a great win. Shows what I know.

    Dan:

    23:14-23:23

My strong-willed child, my strong-willed four-year-old, Evie, was so worried that she would fall that she refused to even put a skate on the ice for most of the time that we were there.

    Dan:

    23:23-23:28

With some patient prodding, I did get her to put the skate on the ice, but then she wouldn't leave the door.

    Dan:

    23:28-23:30

She just looked like this. Sad little face looking up at me.

    Dan:

    23:31-23:42

So we stood there for about an hour. As it became closer and closer for the us for the time for us to leave, she finally decided to put both skates on the ice and to trust me to lead her around the rink.

    Dan:

    23:42-23:51

Well, not only did she not fall, but she really loved it. In the car on the way home, she said to me, "When's the next time we're going ice skating?" Because this was her favorite thing to do.

    Dan:

    23:52-24:28

My response was, "Well, just imagine how much more fun it would have been had you been on the ice for more than 10 minutes." So I don't know what obedience dilemma you find yourself in today, but in all those situations the principle still stands Trust God or miss the blessing There are different levels of this. Maybe you're struggling with elementary level obedience You're having difficulty humbling yourself by repenting and acknowledging your need for a Savior This is a hard thing But the great part about elementary level obedience is that the real hard work of a lifetime of perfectly obeying God has already been done Jesus already did this for us, and that's why we are able to receive the gift of forgiveness that He offers.

    Dan:

    24:29-24:31

The most known verse in the Bible is John 3.16.

    Dan:

    24:32-24:43

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but will have everlasting life." A much lesser known verse is the other side of that coin, two verses later in John 3.18.

    Dan:

    24:43-24:55

"Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." God made this world such that you don't have to obey. You don't.

    Dan:

    24:55-24:58

But just don't expect heaven if you won't believe in Christ.

    Dan:

    24:59-25:00

Trust God or miss the blessing.

    Dan:

    25:01-25:04

In this case, if you won't believe in Christ, then you will not get heaven.

    Dan:

    25:05-25:07

But the inverse is true. If you believe in Christ, then you receive heaven.

    Dan:

    25:07-25:11

Or maybe you're past the elementary level and are learning high school level obedience.

    Dan:

    25:12-25:12

    Today is Palm Sunday.

    Dan:

    25:13-25:27

Palm Sunday is the day where we remember how Jerusalem welcomed the King of Kings with shouts of "Hosanna in the highest." But Palm Sunday is also the day where we are warned about how quickly a person can go from saying "Glory to God" at the start of the week to "Crucify Him" before the week is over.

    Dan:

    25:27-25:35

I recently heard somebody say an interesting phrase. He said, "Most people in the church are vampire Christians." Vampire Christians? What does that mean?

    Dan:

    25:36-25:50

They're only interested in Christ's blood. This means that people are willing to submit to Jesus as Savior, but not as Lord. It isn't enough to worship God on Sunday and to abandon Him and his commandments throughout our week, unwilling to put our own sin to death.

    Dan:

    25:50-25:53

It's hard to give up our own personal sin monument.

    Dan:

    25:53-25:57

My gossip isn't really that big of a deal. I'd rather complain about it than doing something.

    Dan:

    25:57-26:01

Or I'm not going to give up my bitterness until they deserve forgiveness.

    Dan:

    26:01-26:08

Look, there are any number of choices here of sin that I could mention, but it all comes down to, do I do it my way or do I do it God's way?

    Dan:

    26:08-26:11

Moses said that he set before the people of God a blessing or a curse.

    Dan:

    26:12-26:16

A blessing for obedience and a curse for disobedience. It's really simple.

    Dan:

    26:16-26:20

The consequences of disobedience will always catch up with you. The Bible promises that.

    Dan:

    26:20-26:23

But I will attest to you that you will never be disappointed in obeying God.

    Dan:

    26:24-26:30

God is always faithful to bless our decisions when we obey Him, and especially when those are really hard decisions to make.

    Dan:

    26:31-26:35

But past that high school level obedience is graduate level obedience.

    Dan:

    26:36-27:15

Graduate level obedience is listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in all aspects of our lives. I think here in this story, because God had promised the supernatural end of the famine, just the way that he was going to interact this thing and use these lepers who were essentially nobodies. It is my belief that the lepers in our story were spurred by the Holy Spirit to discover something God had already done. They didn't have to listen. They didn't have to go and come up with this plan. They could have just been totally hopeless and stayed there and died. 1 Corinthians 2 says, "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

    Dan:

    27:16-27:22

And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

    Dan:

    27:22-27:37

God is speaking to us every single day as He is working out His plan of salvation in this world. He wants us to be a part of that. He wants us to share the gospel with others, to love sacrificially, and to trust Him in every moment that His ways are better than ours.

    Dan:

    27:37-27:41

He leads us in our conversations. He leads us in how we should spend our time and our money.

    Dan:

    27:42-27:46

He leads us to make the most of every opportunity. He even creates those opportunities.

    Dan:

    27:46-27:55

I had a friend at work who one day he was trying to really find ways that he could obey God, and he's trying to look for opportunities to trust that prompting of the Holy Spirit.

    Dan:

    27:55-29:09

And he was driving, and it was pouring down rain, and there was a guy just randomly standing out in the rain. And he said, "Oh man, I should go give that guy an umbrella." And he drove past. He's to go back and give that guy an umbrella. And he drove around, turned around and went back to the guy. By the time he did, somebody else had given him an umbrella. And the principle has stuck with me. If you don't want to listen to God, He doesn't need us, right? If we don't want to take part, the loss is ours, not God's. He doesn't need us at all. But He loves us too much to let us live without experiencing the blessings that He wants to give us. He to act now. If it is entrusting in God for salvation, do it. Get out of your own way and trust what Christ has done for you. Repent and turn to him. If there's some conviction over sin that's still a part of your life that you continue to struggle with, stop sinning. Stop doing that. Obey God. If you have this feeling, this nudge from the Holy Spirit to do something radically outside of your comfort zone, but completely in line with the character of God, Don't delay any longer. You will experience the blessing of God if you trust and obey him.

    Dan:

    29:09-30:28

And you will miss out if you don't. So my sales pitch to you today is don't delay, act now, obey God in everything. Consider what's the worst that can happen. Remember, good news must be shared and choose for yourself, trust God or miss the blessings that he desires to pour out on you. This isn't your typical limited time offer, but it's definitely one that you do not want to miss out on. Let's pray. Mighty God, you are so worthy to be trusted and obeyed, God. You could easily command obedience from heaven with all the power and all the authority that you have. You could make the rocks cry out praise as your word says, but God, you choose to allow us to obey. You want us to have a choice in our obedience. You want us to lovingly choose to trust you. God, I pray that you would change our hearts, remove our own selfish desires that are blocking us from trusting and obeying you. God, deal with us where we are. Whatever level of obedience we need to do, God, I pray that we would take a step of faith today. I pray that you would change our hearts to give us clarity as to what your voice is saying, that we would be in your word to understand it and not hear the cloud of lies that are around us in the I pray that we would obey your voice and yours alone.

    Dan:

    30:29-30:31

God, I thank you that you have given me this opportunity to speak.

    Dan:

    30:32-30:37

God, I pray that anything that I said was yours, God, and that people would only retain the things that are from you.

    Dan:

    30:37-30:41

God, thank you for this church, and I pray that you would just bless the rest of our service.

    Dan:

    30:41-30:41

    In

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:41-30:43

    your name we pray. Amen.

  • 00:42-00:45

So we're all gonna do a mental exercise this morning to get ready for this sermon.

    00:46-00:46

Are you all ready for this?

    00:47-00:52

I want you all to try and remember how you saw and experienced the world as a young child.

    00:53-00:56

Place yourself in the mindset of a five to seven year old.

    00:56-01:00

As some psychologists would say, get in touch with your inner child.

    01:00-01:03

I don't really know what that means, but try to do that this morning.

    01:03-01:08

I'm gonna give you a few scenarios and you're gonna tell me how you would have felt as a young child, all right?

    01:09-01:12

So imagine that your friend just broke your favorite toy.

    01:12-01:13

    How do you feel?

    01:13-01:15

    You feel angry, right?

    01:15-01:19

I remember when one of my friends broke my favorite Batman mask.

    01:19-01:21

He stepped on it and broke it right in half.

    01:21-01:23

And this wasn't just a minor deal.

    01:23-01:30

This was a huge thing to me because this was my precious possession and it made me feel like Batman.

    01:30-01:34

I remember when my friend irreparably broke my precious mask.

    01:34-01:38

I was filled with intense anger It went far beyond what was appropriate.

    01:39-01:39

    All right, next scenario.

    01:40-01:43

Imagine that you just got grounded on a very nice summer day.

    01:44-01:44

    How do you feel?

    01:45-01:46

    What emotion are you experiencing?

    01:46-01:47

    Angry, anything else?

    01:48-01:48

    Frustrated?

    01:48-01:49

    I would think sadness, right?

    01:50-01:54

You may be so overcome with your sadness that you may cry or beg your parents to let you go back outside.

    01:55-02:00

When I was seven years old, my dad caught me watching a Nickelodeon cartoon that I wasn't allowed to watch.

    02:00-02:01

And so he grounded me for several days.

    02:02-02:09

I remember just looking out my bedroom window with all the kids playing in the beautiful sunshine and rollerblading, and to be honest, I was devastated.

    02:09-02:13

I felt like I had been sentenced to prison for 20 years.

    02:13-02:17

All right, so go back to your teenage or your adult mind because you'll need it for the rest of this message.

    02:17-02:20

When we were kids, our emotions are very intense.

    02:20-02:21

    They're very clear cut.

    02:22-02:23

    They're very simple.

    02:23-02:27

We felt things very deeply, but we got over these emotions rather quickly.

    02:28-02:34

One minute you throw a temper tantrum on the floor, maybe you're pounding on your bed or pounding on the floor because you're really mad, And the next you're perfectly happy.

    02:34-02:39

But as you get older, your emotions become more nuanced, more complex.

    02:39-02:42

You may not even understand how you feel at times.

    02:43-02:50

Even though we experience the various emotions in different degrees, we've all experienced spiritual depression in some way.

    02:50-02:57

We've all had days when we felt emotionally numb, miserable, and maybe even hopeless.

    02:57-02:58

    Am I the only one?

    02:58-03:00

Please don't leave me hanging up here by myself.

    03:01-03:02

Let me ask you an important question.

    03:02-03:07

Is it wrong for a believer to struggle with sadness and depression?

    03:07-03:08

    What do we think?

    03:08-03:09

    No, it is not.

    03:10-03:13

Seasons of sadness are to be expected in a fallen and broken world.

    03:14-03:21

Throughout the Psalms, we see David and the other psalmist being brutally honest about their struggles with depression and sadness.

    03:21-03:26

The Apostle Paul said that he once despaired of life itself.

    03:26-03:34

Even our Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was so stressed out, He was so anxious that literal drops of blood came from his forehead.

    03:35-03:37

Imagine having that kind of anxiety.

    03:37-03:46

So if our greatest spiritual heroes and our Savior Himself experience this kind of sadness, then we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we will as well.

    03:47-03:50

The question is, how will we handle this depression when it comes into our lives?

    03:51-03:55

Will we let it rule our hearts and our minds, or will we handle it God's way?

    03:55-04:01

Thankfully, the Bible has a lot to say about spiritual depression, where it comes from and how we should handle it.

    04:01-04:03

This morning we're going to dig into Psalm chapter 42.

    04:03-04:13

So if you have your Bibles, please open to Psalm chapter 42, which beautifully and honestly presents how we can find hope in the midst of feeling hopeless.

    04:14-04:15

    All right, Psalm chapter 42.

    04:16-04:20

"As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.

    04:21-04:23

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

    04:23-04:25

When shall I come and appear before God?

    04:26-04:41

My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul, how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

    04:42-04:46

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?

    04:47-04:51

Hope in God, fresh elegant praise Him, my salvation and my God.

    04:51-05:00

"My soul is cast down within me, therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon from Mount Miser, deep calls to deep at the roars of your waterfalls.

    05:00-05:03

All of your breakers and your waves have gone over me.

    05:03-05:10

By day the Lord commands His steadfast love, and at night His song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

    05:10-05:13

I say to God, my rock, why have you forgotten me?

    05:14-05:17

Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of my enemy?

    05:17-05:54

Out of the deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me while they say to me, 'All this day long, where is your God? Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." So the heading of this psalm lets us know that it was written and performed by one of the sons of Korah. These were a group of priests who were assigned to the ministry of singing. So this psalm was most likely performed in public worship. And this song is also called a "mascal" in the heading. We're not exactly sure what a masculine is, but it means to make someone wise or to instruct in Hebrew.

    05:55-06:02

So through this psalm, God wants to instruct our minds about spiritual depression as well as engage our emotions.

    06:02-06:08

This background information reveals that God doesn't want us to keep silent when we struggle with depression.

    06:08-06:13

Instead, he wants us to lift up our hearts to him and in prayer and in psalm.

    06:13-06:40

But a question that we need to deal with before we move on to the text is where does depression come from? What are the sources of depression? So first I'm going to talk about the sources of depression that we will not be covering for the rest of this message even though they're very important. First there is personal sin. Personal sin. As a Christian, if you're living in habitual and unrepentant sin, you will experience a sense of sadness, grief, and maybe even depression.

    06:40-06:51

If you can constantly make the same sinful choice on an endless loop without even caring or feeling bad about it at all, you need to check your heart to see if you even know Christ and have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    06:52-06:54

So what is the solution to this kind of depression?

    06:54-06:56

Stop pretending like everything is okay.

    06:56-07:00

Confess your sin to the Lord and other believers and repent.

    07:00-07:07

Turn your back on your sinful thinking and sinful living and ask the Lord for His grace so you can change.

    07:07-07:14

It's important to understand that sin isn't always the source of depression, it is simply a common source of depression.

    07:14-07:20

Another source of depression that we will not be covering in this sermon is mental or psychological issues.

    07:21-07:25

I've talked to many Christians who don't believe in mental illness or clinical depression.

    07:25-07:28

And I have to really disagree with this line of thinking.

    07:28-07:34

If our body feels the effects of the fall and suffers various illnesses, so can our minds.

    07:34-07:41

In some cases, it would be beneficial for a believer to be prescribed medication for their bowels with clinical depression.

    07:41-07:43

So please, do not be ashamed.

    07:43-08:36

you need to travel down that pharmaceutical route in order to deal with your issues. However, I do believe that many doctors misdiagnose clinical depression and they're over eager in prescribing drugs. For someone suffering the spiritual depression, this medication will only mask that problem and it will actually get to the root of it. So, identifying the differences between spiritual depression and clinical depression is very difficult and it requires great wisdom. If some people actually struggle with both forms of depression at the same exact time. I don't want to spend much more time on this but let me just say that there are Christians who would greatly benefit from seeking help from a medical professional. So let's now talk about the sources of depression that this Psalm is speaking to. There's the unexpected trials and hardships of life. Maybe you experience a sudden death of a loved one and this loss just rocks your world and throws your emotional life into chaos.

    08:36-08:46

You have no idea what to do. You don't know how you can move on without this Maybe you're going through a marital problem or a financial issue right now and the future seems very uncertain.

    08:47-08:51

Another source of depression is the pressure and anxieties of life.

    08:51-08:54

I don't know about you, but for me, sometimes the weekly grind can just be soul crushing.

    08:55-08:59

You can just feel like you're crumbling under the intense weight of your busy schedule.

    08:59-09:04

Maybe work is really hectic for you right now and it seems like there's no end in sight to this busy season.

    09:04-09:12

Maybe you even wake up in the morning and you just want to go right back to sleep you don't want to deal with your endless list of responsibilities and tasks.

    09:13-09:59

Whatever the source may be in your life, you will have days, weeks, maybe even months where your soul feels cast down as this psalm describes. You may even feel like God has forgotten about you. You may feel like God has totally abandoned you. That life is pure chaos and God isn't in control. So what do you do when you experience these feelings? The psalm lays out four ways to fight against spiritual depression and we have them on your outline. First, how to fight against spiritual depression. Be honest with God about it. Be honest with God about it. Throughout this psalm, the writer is really honest with God about what he is feeling and experiencing. Listen to what he says in verse 9, "I say to God my rock, why have you forgotten?" Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever said that to God?

    09:59-10:06

God, do you even remember me? You know what's going on in my life right now? Now, obviously God never abandons us. He never forsakes us, but it can feel like that.

    10:06-10:10

at a time. There may be some days where it feels like you're just talking to no one.

    10:10-12:01

You're just praying to the ceiling and God isn't listening. Instead of suffering in silence or putting on that fake church smile on Sunday morning, be honest with God about what you're going through. Cry out to Him and tell Him how you feel because you know what? He already knows how you feel. He knows what emotions you're experiencing and what thoughts are already swirling around in your mind. You cannot find God's solution to your problem until you admit that there actually is a problem. And don't just keep your problem between you and the Lord. God has gifted you with an amazing church family. He wants you to share your struggles with them. If you're struggling with this kind of sadness today, at least talk to one other believer about it. The Christian life isn't a solo homework assignment. It's a community project. We aren't meant to grow or suffer alone. Never forget how much you need every single person in this room. You cannot do your life on your own no matter how much you might want to at times. Secondly, how to fight against depression. Desire and seek after the Lord. We have to desire and seek after the Lord. My favorite part of the psalm is the first two verses. "As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God, my soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?" According to these verses, this psalmist actually desires to know God more than to have his difficult circumstances solved. More than anything he wants to grow closer to his God and become more like him. Sadly we can often treat God like a divine vending machine. We hit the right buttons in prayer so we expect him to give us whatever we want and to solve all of our issues very easily. Instead we should passionately seek after the Lord in the midst of our struggles, ask him to make us more like him. Of course it's acceptable and encouraged to ask God to solve our problems and bring our requests to him.

    12:02-12:37

We're called in 1 Peter 5, 7 to cast all of our cares, all of our anxieties upon the capable shoulders of the Lord because he cares for us and he's the only one who can truly bear them on our behalf. At the same time, we must recognize that God has a purpose for what we are going. Your pain is not meaningless. God brings trials, suffering, and pain into our lives to smooth out our sinful edges and mold us into the image of Jesus Christ. Reject your natural instinct which is to lean back from this, resist it, get angry about it.

    12:37-13:22

Instead, lean into it. Lean in to God's discipline and to God's change and ask for his grace that you can become more like your Savior. The Lord will not always solve your problems the way that you want him to, but he will always pull you into an intimate and personal relationship with him if you're willing and submissive. So thirdly, how to fight against spiritual depression. Remember God's past faithfulness. Remember God's past faithfulness. We see this in verses 3 through 4. "My tears have been my food day and night while they say to me all the day long, 'Where is your God?' These things I'll remember as I pour out my soul, how I go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shout and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

    13:22-13:23

So what is the psalmist doing here?

    13:24-13:29

He's looking back at the awesome times of fellowship and worship that he experienced in the past.

    13:29-13:35

He's remembering the many times he walked into the temple to worship his God with his fellow Israelites.

    13:35-13:41

These joyful and uplifting memories from the past give him hope and encouragement in the present.

    13:41-13:49

Jay already said I am the youth pastor at North Park Church in Wexford, And one of my jobs is to lead a summer missions trip every single July.

    13:49-13:52

And to be honest with you, this really stresses me out.

    13:52-13:57

And to be clear, I have a lot of fun doing it and I really have a great time with my students.

    13:57-14:04

But being responsible for like 30 teenage lives for a whole week isn't the most relaxing activity in the world.

    14:04-14:12

Every single time I'm driving that 15 passenger van out of the church parking lot, I feel like I have to take in a huge breath that I can't let out until we get back.

    14:13-14:17

And I have all these anxieties and worries swirling around in my mind.

    14:17-14:19

Like what if I forget a kid at a rest stop?

    14:19-14:22

What if they get hurt on the work site?

    14:22-14:23

What if we get in a car accident?

    14:24-14:24

    What if?

    14:24-14:24

    What if?

    14:25-14:25

    What if?

    14:25-14:25

    What if?

    14:25-14:27

I have all these worries going on.

    14:27-14:34

And to help myself fight these anxieties, I look back at how God has provided for every single trip that we have embarked upon.

    14:34-14:41

Even though they didn't always work out the way I wanted or expected, God came through for us and He had a much better plan.

    14:41-14:48

This walk down memory lane helps to ease my anxiety and give me a peace that surpasses all understanding.

    14:48-14:51

It's the same with fighting against the depression that we feel a ton.

    14:51-15:00

Instead of wallowing in sadness and misery, we need to look back to see how God has provided for us and taken care of us every step along the way.

    15:00-15:05

We need to remember the good times of happiness and joy that we experienced with the Lord.

    15:05-15:15

When you feel like God has abandoned you or forgotten you, remember the closeness you you once felt as you engaged with Him in your personal devotions or on Sunday morning during worship.

    15:15-15:24

We need to remind ourselves that God has pulled us out of the pit of despair a countless number of times throughout our lives and He will continue to do so until the day of our death.

    15:25-15:32

Looking back at God's past faithfulness is the greatest way to build up your confidence in His present and future faithfulness.

    15:33-15:35

So finally, how to fight against spiritual depression?

    15:35-15:39

Preach the truth to yourself and hope in the promises of God.

    15:39-15:42

the truth to yourself and hope in the promises of God.

    15:43-15:50

This psalmist actually preaches an important message to himself in order to get himself out of this spiritual and emotional funk.

    15:50-15:56

Listen to what he says again in verse 5, "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?

    15:56-16:08

Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." Now, this short sermon must be really important because he repeats it word for word in verse 11 to close out the psalm.

    16:08-16:12

So what is the point of this important message that the psalmist is giving himself?

    16:12-16:16

He's essentially saying this to himself, "Why are you so depressed?

    16:16-16:19

Why are you giving yourself over to misery and hopelessness?

    16:20-16:31

Choose to hope in the character and promises of your great God and Savior." We need to preach a similar message to ourselves when we're struggling with spiritual depression and sadness.

    16:31-16:36

Because instead of preaching the truth to ourselves, we tend to listen to the lies of our inner critic.

    16:36-16:37

Do you know what I mean by our inner critic?

    16:38-16:39

    We all have one.

    16:39-16:44

It's that voice that constantly tries to condemn you and make you feel like garbage.

    16:44-16:52

It's that voice whenever you're going through a spiritual dry spell and God feels very distant that says to you, "God doesn't care about you.

    16:52-16:53

He is not here for you.

    16:54-17:03

You are on your own." When you're going through a trial and you feel like your faith is hanging on by a thread, the inner critic gets in your face and says, "Just give up.

    17:03-17:05

There is no point behind your pain.

    17:05-17:06

    It's meaningless.

    17:06-17:07

    Life is chaos.

    17:08-19:33

nothing. Whenever you make a mistake, whenever you sin and do something you know you shouldn't do, the inner critic just rubs this mistake in your face, says you're such a failure, you're never gonna change. God's disgusted with you, he wants nothing to do with you. These false messages, these lies can be debilitating and disheartening if we let them. In the 1960s, one of my favorite preachers of all time, Martin Lloyd-Jones, wrote a very helpful book called Spiritual Depression. Listen to what he has to say about dealing with your inner critic and preaching the truth to yourself. Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? The essence of this matter is to understand this self of ours, this other man within us, this inner critic has got to be handled. Do not listen to him. Instead, speak to him, condemn him, exhort him, encourage him, remind him of what you know instead of listening placidly to him and allowing him to drag you down and depress you. For this is what he will always do if you allow him to be in control. Please do not listen to the lies of Satan and your inner critic. Shut them down with the truth of God's Word and drown out their worthless voices with the beautiful and life-giving words of Scripture. When you hear the inner critic, throw a Bible verse back in his face. The word in your mind so you can be ready to do the spiritual battle. We need to constantly remind ourselves of the simple yet deep gospel message and the unbreakable promises of God. Never forget that you are a loved child of God, has been cleansed from your sins by the blood of Christ. You've been adopted into his family. That God promises to never leave you or forsake you. He promises to do everything for your ultimate good. He even uses those bad things to make you more like Christ. That is your ultimate good. He has given you the Holy Spirit to strengthen you in these moments of weakness and comfort you in the midst of disappointments of life. You know it's hard for me to say this as a preacher but the most important sermons you will ever hear are the ones you preach to yourself in the midst of trial and hardship. So instead of giving in, teach yourself the truth. I know in a room this size that many of us are struggling with spiritual sadness and depression right now. You may feel like you're sinking in sorrow and you can't swim back up to the surface to catch your breath.

    19:33-20:09

But please know this morning, there is hope in Jesus Christ and you will make it the other side of this struggle. I don't want to minimize your pain but I also don't want to maximize the fears and the false messages that you're believing right now. I instead want to point you to Christ and the never-ending supply of joy that he provides. Instead of focusing on the magnitude of your problems, choose to fix your eyes upon the immensity of your God. We'll have a more accurate view of our problems when we begin to comprehend the bigness of our God. When we have a small view of God, our problems are blown out of proportion.

    20:10-21:10

But when we have a big view of a God that we cannot completely understand, our problems begin to shrink down and seem much more manageable. Small God, big problems. Big God, small problems. Do that with me. Small God, big problems. Big God, small problem. Others of us aren't struggling with this kind of sadness right now, but I can guarantee you that it's coming. I don't know when it is. It could be next week, it could be next month, it could be next year. Regardless of when it comes, you have to be ready. You need to root yourself on the solid rock of Christ and His gospel that the rough ways of circumstances and emotions will not be able to move you. Let's pray. Father, all of us are going through something right now, whether it's big or whether it's small. We all struggle with trusting in you. We all struggle with believing that you are enough even though you are more than enough for us. It would help us to remember that we are your children and you love us more than we can possibly imagine. Your word tells us that you love us with the same intense love that you have for your one and only son.

    21:10-21:22

How awesome is that? Well, there may be someone in this room who's thinking about suicide, Lord. Maybe someone in this room who doesn't think they can make it another day. I pray that you would come alongside them, point them to the truth, and you'd comfort them.

    21:23-21:25

There's many people in this room who are struggling with depression, Lord.

    21:25-21:29

I pray they would take this sermon to heart, and walk in the joy that you alone provide.

    21:29-21:31

We thank you for all that you do for us.

    21:31-21:33

    In Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Psalm 42

  1. What stood out to you from the message? What convicted or encouraged you?

  2. According to Psalm 42, how can we find hope in the midst of feeling hopeless?

  3. What does it mean/look like to preach the gospel to yourself on a daily basis? Why is this so important?

  4. Why are we often tempted to act fake around other Christians and pretend like everything is fine? How can we become a more transparent group of believers?

  • Pastor Jeff:

    00:32-00:36

Open up your Bibles with me please to Revelation chapter 14.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:36-00:42

This is our last message in Revelation for a while, and the last message for me for a while.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:42-00:52

But we have a couple of tremendous guest speakers the next couple of weeks, and then we'll be getting into Good Friday, Resurrection Sunday, and celebrating...

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:52-01:00

That's our Super Bowl, right? We're celebrating what this church is all about, and that is the death and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:00-01:02

So that's the next few weeks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:02-01:15

So today, Revelation chapter 14, while you're turning there, just to get us all caught up where we are, Revelation chapter 12, we saw a flashback, which was Satan waging war on Israel and on the Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:16-01:28

And we saw sometime in the future, there's going to be a war breakout in heaven that results in Satan being cast down to the earth, furious he's going to wage war on God's people, specifically Israel, like never before.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:29-01:34

Chapter 13, we saw two men that Satan is going to use to lead his assault on the earth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:34-01:38

Two beasts, the Antichrist and the false prophet.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:38-01:43

The false prophet is going to force the world to worship the Antichrist.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:43-01:48

He's going to do that by false signs and they're going to do that by controlling the economy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:48-02:01

Chapter 14, last week we saw the 144,000 with the Lamb on Mount Zion and three angels sent by God proclaiming three messages and one more effort by God to reach the lost.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:01-02:05

So chapters 12 through 14, it's one vision.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:05-02:14

It's a sort of a panorama that took us from Satan's assault on Israel and on Christ all the way to the very end of the age.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:14-02:27

And since this is the last message in this parenthetical section, the passage we're looking at today describes the final reaping, the final harvesting of the earth as Jesus Christ brings judgment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:28-02:41

If you're familiar with the Bible, some of these images are going to sound very familiar to you because all through the Old Testament there's imagery of the end days using harvesting and grapes in a wine press terminology.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:41-02:51

Isaiah 63 for example, Joel chapter 3 and Jesus himself used harvest terminology when When he talked about the end of the age, you can read about that in Matthew chapter 13.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:52-02:56

What we're looking at in the passage today is God's wrath with two pictures.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:56-02:59

There's the grain harvest and there's the grape harvest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:59-03:00

    Why two pictures?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:00-03:01

Why didn't he just give one?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:02-03:06

Well, the reason there are two pictures is there are really two aspects of the judgment that are coming.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:06-03:13

In the first one, the grain judgment, the grain harvest rather, is the bowl judgments.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:13-03:23

Remember in Revelation we've seen seven seal trumpets and seven trumpet judgments, but we have seven bowl judgments that are coming, and they're represented by the grain harvest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:23-03:33

We'll read about those in chapter 16, chapter 17 and 18, with the defeat of Babylon, and then the grape judgment, the wine press, that's the battle of Armageddon, and we're going to talk about that briefly today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:33-03:37

That's where Jesus comes to destroy his enemies, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:37-03:55

So if you have this idea in your mind that Jesus is just sort of a Mr. Rogers type who would never do anything in the name of judgment or punishment or stay tuned because you're about to see something from God's Word that is pretty graphic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:56-03:58

Harvest time, I want you to write some things down here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:58-04:02

Harvest time, I couldn't think of anything better to call this passage than just what it is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:02-04:04

This is the violent end of unbelievers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:04-04:06

    The violent end of unbelievers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:06-04:09

So first of all, let's talk about the grain harvest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:09-04:11

    Ripe for reaping.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:11-04:12

    Ripe for reaping.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:12-04:14

    Let's look at chapter 14, verse 14.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:15-04:25

John says, "Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and seated on the cloud, one like a son of man, with a golden crown on his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:26-04:37

And another angel came out of the temple, calling with a loud voice to him, who sat on the cloud, 'Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come.' the harvest of the earth is fully ripe.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:38-04:44

So he who sat on the cloud, swing his sickle across the earth and the earth was reaped.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:44-04:46

So again, this symbolizes the seven bold judgments.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:47-04:56

They are prepared in chapter 15, they are executed in chapter 16 and the fallout you could say is described in chapter 17 and 18.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:56-05:01

And once again, we see angels assisting Jesus in the judgment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:01-05:45

Angels have been seen throughout the book of Revelation in Christ with judgment. They've called out the horsemen, they've blasted their trumpets, they've fought Satan and his demons. Earlier in chapter 14 we had three angels warning of judgment and in this passage we're looking at here we're going to see three angels coming to implement judgment. But I want you to see in this passage Jesus Christ himself is back on the scene. And I want you to see what's on his head and what's in his hand. First what a sickle was, it's a long curved blade on the end of a handle that would be used to swing and cut down wheat for harvesting.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:45-05:50

So the sickle tells us that he has come here to judge and on his head is a crown.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:51-05:58

You know, it's interesting when you think of the first time Jesus came and what happened and how the Bible describes the second time he's coming.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:58-06:02

You know, the first time Jesus came, the Bible says he wore a crown then too.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:02-06:05

He wore a crown of thorns and he was a servant.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:06-06:14

Revelation tells us the second time that Jesus comes, he's going to wear a golden victor's crown and he's going to be the king.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:14-06:17

The first time that Jesus came, he came to sow, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:18-06:24

He came to sow the word of God and he gave the word of God to his people who sow the word of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:25-06:31

The first time Jesus came was all about sowing and the second time Jesus comes, we see here it's going to be about reaping.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:31-06:35

going to be reaping. The first time Jesus Christ came to the earth it was to defeat sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:36-06:40

That's what the cross of Jesus Christ is all about. He came, we're going to talk all about this here in a few weeks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:40-06:42

The first time Jesus came it was to defeat sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:43-06:46

And here we see the second time Jesus comes it's to defeat sinners.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:47-06:51

I love this expression here. You want to underline this in your Bible.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:51-06:59

It says, verse fourteen, "Seated on the cloud one, like a son of man," underline that, son of man.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:59-07:03

That's very interesting because this is the last place in the Bible that phrase is used.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:03-07:04

And here's why that's so interesting.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:04-07:09

You know the first time that phrase was used was actually in Matthew 8, verse 20.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:09-07:15

If you look at that passage, Jesus said, "The Son of Man has no place to lay his head." Think about that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:15-07:24

The creator of everything comes to the earth and he doesn't have a home, he doesn't have an apartment, he doesn't have a tent, he has nothing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:24-07:33

Jesus said, "I don't even have any place to lay my head, the Son of Man." The second time he comes, it's going to be to reclaim the entire earth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:33-07:37

The last time the Son of Man is used is to take back everything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:38-07:40

You can receive Jesus Christ today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:40-07:44

You can find forgiveness and you can find mercy and you can find grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:44-07:49

Or you can wait and you can meet him when he has his sickle in his hand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:50-07:54

You know, sort of like when some of you were kids, some of you are going to totally relate to this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:54-07:57

It's like when you heard Dad coming with the belt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:57-08:00

Now, how many people can relate to this? When you heard Dad coming with the belt, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:01-08:09

I remember, and Darren, you can testify to this, but there was a very distinct succession of sounds that you would hear.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:09-08:17

You would hear their closet door open, and then you would hear the jingle of the belt buckle, and then you heard footsteps.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:17-08:22

And when you heard that footsteps, the thought that went through your mind, at least the thought that went through my mind, was this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:23-08:25

the time for negotiation is over.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:25-08:29

There is no talking myself out of what is about to come.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:29-08:31

Can anybody relate to what I'm talking about here?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:31-08:33

Okay, some of you heartily raised your hands.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:34-08:36

Alright, well that's sort of the point in this passage.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:36-08:41

When Jesus comes with his sickle in his hand, the time for negotiation is over.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:41-08:44

The time for, "You know what? I was gonna repent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:44-08:50

I was gonna start going to church and I was gonna start getting serious about you." No, that's like that coming with the belt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:50-08:51

    Like, it is too late.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:51-08:54

That window of opportunity has shut, pal.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:54-08:56

And now is the time to reap.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:56-08:56

    Time to reap.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:57-09:05

Notice it says, "The harvest of the earth," verse 15, "is fully ripe." Interestingly, that word for ripe, the Greek word for ripe there means rotten.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:05-09:09

Sometimes we think ripe, we think like an apple that's ready to eat.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:09-09:12

But literally this Greek word here is rotten, unusable.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:13-09:17

And that gives you a picture of what the earth looks like to the Lord at this point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:17-09:19

It's past the point of usefulness.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:19-09:22

You know, it's like that banana that's more black than yellow at this point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:23-09:24

You know what I'm talking about?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:24-09:25

Like, I am so not eating that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:26-09:27

    That's the word for ripe.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:27-09:30

At this point, Christ says the whole earth has become rotten, unusable.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:31-09:35

And this angel, this fourth angel in chapter 14 gives the message from God to Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:36-09:36

    Say it's time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:37-09:39

God's anger has reached his limit, and there's no turning back.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:40-09:41

    It's time to reap.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:41-09:44

We're going to talk about the bowl judgments in just a few weeks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:44-09:46

But I will say this about the bowl judgments.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:46-10:20

If you thought if you thought the seal trumpets were bad and if you thought the trumpet judgments were bad Those were firecrackers compared to the nuclear bomb that's coming. All right, so that's the grain harvest right for reaping secondly It's like about the grape harvest right for crushing right for crushing looking for 17 It says then another angel came out of the temple in heaven and he too had a sharpsicle And another angel, keep track of all these angels, like number five, number six, and another angel came out from the altar, the angel who has authority over the fire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:20-10:21

    What is that all about?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:21-10:22

We'll talk about that in a second.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:22-10:40

And he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, "Put in your sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, for its grapes are ripe." So the angel swung his sickle across the earth and gathered the grape harvest of the earth and threw it in the great winepress of the wrath of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:40-10:49

And the winepress was trodden outside the city and blood flowed from the winepress as high as a horse's bridle for 1600 stadia.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:50-10:52

    That's about 184 miles.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:52-10:54

Talk about what that means here in a second.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:54-10:56

But the grape harvest, ripe for crushing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:56-10:59

This vision very clearly describes the battle of Armageddon.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:00-11:04

The details for that are in Revelation chapter 19 verses 11 through 21.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:04-11:26

again lord william we're going to get there so this fifth angel is told from the sixth angel in this passage that the time has come. The sixth angel is said to come from the altar. What's the altar? Verse eighteen. It says well this is the heavenly altar of incense and it says the angel who has authority over the fire. What in the world is that all about?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:27-11:40

Well in the old testament, priests would twice a day take coals from the sacrificial altar, the altar where you would offer the sacrifice, they would take coals from that altar and they would put them in the incense altar.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:41-11:44

And that rising fragrance would symbolize prayers.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:45-11:49

Actually the Bible says that God's people would be praying while this took place.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:49-11:55

So this angel apparently is in some sort of a priestly role in heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:55-12:01

We already saw this heavenly altar of incense in chapter 6 verses 9-11, chapter 8 verses 3-5.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:02-12:23

But remember when we saw the altar in chapter 6 we had the martyred saints praying, crying out to God under the altar saying, "How long before you avenge us and judge those who murdered us?" And God said, "Just wait a little long." And you see John's vision here that we are reading now, this vision here is the preview for what actually happens when the wait is over.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:24-12:27

Once again it said that the harvest is ripe, verse 15, fully ripe.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:28-12:29

It's actually a different word in the Greek.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:30-12:33

This word refers to something in its prime, something that's ready.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:33-12:36

Verses 19 and 20 talk about the winepress of the wrath of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:36-12:37

    What is a winepress?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:38-12:44

Well, a winepress was, there'd be two stone basins, but they were connected by a trough, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:44-12:50

And you would put the grapes in one of the basins and stomp on them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:50-12:51

    Anybody ever do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:51-12:52

Stomp on grapes to make wine?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:52-12:53

    Anybody ever do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:54-13:21

here okay but has anybody seen it on TV? Okay all right so you know what I'm talking about you put the okay put the grapes in the bowl and you stomp it and then the the the wine goes from one basin to the other through this trough and that's a graphic picture of what's going to happen in this battle in Revelation chapter 19. It's a picture of the enemies of Christ with their blood splattering everywhere.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:22-13:30

And when you think about what is being pictured here and when we get to chapter 19 and you see what actually happens, it's a pretty gruesome picture.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:30-13:35

That when Christ returns for this battle, it's going to literally be a bloodbath.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:35-13:40

The first time that Jesus came, the blood of the lamb was shed by his enemies.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:40-13:42

And now, the lamb is going to shed their blood.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:42-14:19

It says, "outside the city." "Outside the city," verse 20, it says, "the winepress was trodden outside the city." Why? Well, the Lord is going to protect Jerusalem, that's going to be Christ's kingdom, during the capital of his, it's going to be the capital, excuse me, of the kingdom during Christ's millennial reign on the earth. The battle of Armageddon is likely going to take place 60 miles north of Jerusalem in a plain called Esdraelon, which is near Mount Megiddo, which is where it gets its name Armageddon. So millions are going to gather for this battle. We're going to talk about why this gathering takes place. We actually see it in Revelation chapter 16.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:20-14:40

The millions and millions and millions of people are going to gather to fight against Jesus Christ. One conservative estimate I read this week says this army could be 200 million people gathering to fight against Christ and their bloodshed is going to be incredible. It's described in this passage as being as high as a horse's bridle.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:40-14:43

How high is a horse's bridle? About four feet. Think about that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:44-14:55

The bloodshed is going to be so horrific, it's described as being four feet deep, or 1,600 stadiums, or 184, 200-ish miles.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:55-14:57

    This is a literal bloodbath.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:57-15:08

So the point is, in this last battle, millions assembled to make the mightiest army that has ever been assembled on the earth, and they're going to be nothing more than grapes in God's wine press.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:08-15:13

The angel cuts the grapes down, and Christ crushes out their lives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:13-15:25

Hebrews 10.31 says, "It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God." That's it. That's the passage. It's a preview for what's coming, and we're going to get into more detail as we talk about it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:25-15:34

That's what's described. And, you know, as I was working on that this week, permission to speak freely? Thank you. I was like, another passage about God's judgment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:34-15:38

That makes what? Like the 117th this month, it seems like. Seems like.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:39-15:41

Then you get to thinking, how am I going to roll this out?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:41-15:48

What aspect of God's judgment am I going to roll out this time that we haven't already covered through our Revelation?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:48-15:51

Because let's be honest, it's been pretty exhaustive as far as...

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:51-15:58

not exhausting, it's been pretty exhaustive as far as all of the concept being covered, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:58-16:01

We've seen God's compassion in pursuing the lost.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:01-16:06

We've seen the, you know, the urgency in making sure you make that decision today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:06-16:11

And we've seen how horrific hell is going to be and it being eternal.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:11-16:13

    And we've seen hard-heartedness.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:13-16:16

And we kind of talked about all of it, didn't we?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:16-16:21

And this week I'm thinking, I'm going to stand up and maybe they'll give me some grace since this is my last message from Guam for a while.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:22-16:27

So maybe I'm thinking, OK, maybe if the sermon really stinks, they'll forget about it by the time I come back.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:28-16:31

And it's like, no, Jeff, you're the one with the memory problem, not them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:31-16:33

But I've been thinking about it a lot.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:33-16:35

    Just not just this message.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:35-17:33

As I'm thinking about judgment and all of the sermons that we've had going through Revelation about judgment, this whole series, you know what I got to thinking about this week? I got to thinking about what about that person or persons that's been sitting here through this entire series in Revelation and heard all of these messages, heard all of these messages about these aspects, these facets of God's judgment, and they still haven't received Christ. I was thinking about that. And you're like, Jeff, do you really think there's people at this church that don't know the Lord. Yeah, there's people in every church that don't know the Lord. They're self-deceived. I thought about that person that's been sitting here listening to all of this and walking through all of this verse by verse through Revelation, but they still haven't received Christ to this point. I thought, I wonder what's going on in that person's mind. I mean, what's going on in that person's heart? They can hear all this and be like, "Where do you want to go for lunch?" and then it's by the time you get home this message is ancient history.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:34-18:21

Like what's going on with that guy? You know I used to think that hell and judgment and talking about those things, I used to think that was such a motivator because in my mind I guess it just sort of makes sense because life is short you don't know how long you're gonna have. You might have one more day on the earth, you might have 70 more years, but you're gonna die someday. I mean that's a fact. And eternity, I mean, we can barely fathom the concept of eternity. I mean, think about that. You can be in eternity for 10,000 years, and at that point, it's nothing more than hitting the first note in a song that is forever on loop. And I thought back to, you know, not just thinking about the people hearing these messages that are happy to ignore them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:21-18:58

I was thinking back to when I was a kid growing up in the Methodist church when you're 12 you go to these confirmation classes and you learn the books of the Bible and the Apostles Creed and different things you go to these classes but part of these classes was the pastor would take you into the auditorium just you and him and this was the conversation we had I remember it like it was yesterday but the pastor sat me down and he said and I'm 12 years old he says Jeff you don't want Or just like a youth group field trip that I didn't know was being planned like where are you going with this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:58-19:22

He's like you don't want to go to hell there yet. I'm like no, I don't want to go to hell He's like then you want to you want to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, right? And I said Okay, sure. And every time I saw that pastor after that he would say Oh Jeff I remember the day you gave your life to the Lord. I remember the day you received Jesus and I was like, yeah Yeah, that was a great day, wasn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:22-19:22

    Mmm.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:23-19:24

    Now look, here's the thing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:25-19:36

I know his intentions were good, but as I think back to that whole exchange, and I think about these messages in Revelation, I have to wonder, why wasn't that effective on me then?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:36-19:42

I didn't receive Christ until almost eight years after that, when I was 20.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:42-19:43

I guess it boils down to this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:44-19:50

someone in the face of judgment, thinking about hell, all of these things, why they wouldn't come to Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:50-19:53

Either people don't know, they don't know, they're ignorant.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:53-19:58

But gosh, I would think that would be really hard for somebody that's been coming here and hearing all these messages.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:58-20:03

That would be really hard to miss everything that I've said over the past several months.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:03-20:08

I mean, that'd be like Olympic level, like distracted in church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:09-20:17

You're not just drawing on your sermon outline page, you're like painting the Mona Lisa every single week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:17-20:20

I mean, that would be epic, ignoring me for that long.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:21-20:23

So I kind of find that hard to believe.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:23-20:29

People don't know, or people, maybe people don't believe anyone's actually going to face judgment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:29-20:33

Like, "Oh, there's Pastor Jeff up there talking about boogeyman stuff again," or whatever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:34-22:01

It's just hard to imagine someone would still be sitting here through all these messages believe that these words in the Bible are true. Or the third option, third option is probably the worst, is people just don't care. They get distracted. I got too much going on in my life right now to get serious about this gospel business, being involved in a church, and it sounds like this church, you know, being a member here, they're going to ask me to be involved actively. Yes, we are. And I just really don't have that time right now. And maybe they just choose not to think about death. That's why they don't care. People are ignorant or they don't believe it or they just don't care. I was thinking about that guy this week, that guy that's been sitting through all this and hasn't received Christ. And then I got to thinking, not just about that guy, I got to thinking about me. And the question I've had to ask myself this week is this, what motivates me to keep sharing the gospel with that guy, right? Even I've been telling you about the end of the world for months and you still don't care? Like what motivates me? What motivates you to share the gospel? You know throughout Revelation we've seen God constantly warning and pursuing people even as these events are going down. We saw the 144,000 Jews, we saw the two witnesses in chapter 11, we saw the three angels. So I guess when I thought about what motivates me to share the gospel passionately and persistently and to keep going after it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:01-23:07

I had to ask myself, well, what motivates God? What motivates God to keep pursuing people that persistently reject him? What motivates God to go after people who didn't give a rip about God the first 10,000 times he's gone after them? What motivates God to keep rolling out the gospel steadily and faithfully. And I think if I find what motivates God, then I find what should motivate me. And if I find what can motivate me, I can stand up here today and tell you what should motivate you. Does that make sense? Because I can start all over. All right, open your Bibles to Revelation chapter 14. Okay, maybe people don't know. Maybe they have been that Olympic-level distracted this whole time and they don't know, but today, today they forgot their paints and they are unable to paint their masterpiece on their bulletin today. Maybe today is the day that they're listening. Maybe they don't know what we've been talking about this whole time, but I do. Maybe, maybe people don't believe, but I do. And maybe people don't care, but I do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:07-23:15

So maybe the tireless passion to share the message has less to do with the audience and more to do with the messenger.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:15-23:28

Maybe the tireless passion to share the message has less to do with people's responsiveness to the message and more to do with the messenger's love for the gospel and the messenger's concern for the lost.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:29-23:40

So maybe our motivation, maybe our motivation shouldn't be as focused on the person we're trying to reach as much as it is our own heart for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:40-23:50

Speaking of harvest, in John chapter 4, verse 35 and 36, Jesus said, "Do you not say there are yet four months and then comes the harvest?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:51-23:56

Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes and see that the fields are white for harvest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:57-24:25

Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that the sower and reaper may rejoice together." See, this work of sharing the gospel, whether you want to call it evangelism, whether you want to call it mission work, whether you want to call it fulfilling the great commission, this work of getting the gospel out should be a matter of rejoicing for a church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:25-25:13

When we talk about outreach and missions, it shouldn't be like, "Oh gosh, I didn't know I that excites us. It should be something that fires us up. But every time it's something that if we're not going after it, it's just real easy to let the passion wait. So again I was thinking about this message. I was thinking about standing in front of you today and I was thinking about, "All right, what can I say that's going to fire people up to share the gospel like just like they did the day after they received Christ?" And it didn't take me long to realize that I the ability to do that because that sort of urgency, that sort of rejoicing, that sort of passion can only come from Jesus Christ and only come from God's Holy Spirit.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:13-25:17

And I thought, you know, maybe the most appropriate thing that we can do is pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:18-25:21

And I'd like us to close our sermon time here with prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:22-25:26

And I want us to pray for the mission work that God has called us to.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:26-25:28

Russ Houser, he'd come up here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:28-25:29

I asked Russ if he'd give us an update.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:30-25:31

    He's come back from India.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:31-26:33

But here's what I want us to pray for and I have a little list here just five things on your outline That I want you to keep handy stick this in your Bible and make this a matter of prayer this week for passion to pray Continuing to pray passion to give and support those who are going and passion to go But these are the mission opportunities we have before us this September We're planning a trip to Thailand and I talked to our missionary over there last week actually on where you talk about being distracted for us all morning my phone has been buzzing it's our missionary friend in Thailand sending me pictures and you're like why isn't he in church pastor Jeff well because it's like 11 at night over there okay like why isn't he in bed pastor Jeff he's sending me pictures but we have an opportunity to do mission work in Thailand and you don't want an incredible opportunity this is we're going to be able to go over they want us to hold a Bible seminar for their evangelists and Hill Tribe preachers, they don't get formalized education.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:33-26:36

They don't come to Christ and then go off to Bible college.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:36-26:42

They come to Christ and they're excited about the gospel, but they have very little in the way of equipping.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:42-26:44

We're going to get to hold a Bible seminar for those people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:44-26:46

We have a list of topics.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:46-27:18

But think of the impact that we're going to be able to have as those dozens and dozens and dozens of pastors and evangelists go back out carrying what they've learned back to their respective churches. What an impact, what an opportunity we have. Matt and Lexi Cole are going to the Dominican Republic again and they need prayer and they need support and I talked to Matt the other day we want to get them up here to let everyone know what's going on with this trip and how we can be involved. Our youth group is going to Houston and I know after talking about Thailand and the Dominican Republic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:18-27:22

You're like, also the exotic third world location of Houston.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:23-27:26

But the need is just as great there as it is in other places.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:27-27:29

This is a huge trip and they need your prayer support.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:30-27:32

Also on the list is our small group outreach.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:32-27:42

We encourage every small group to be involved in some aspect of local outreach, getting out into our own communities, sharing the love and the word of Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:43-27:45

But very recently, and I asked Russ to give us an update.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:45-27:47

    Russ, you went to India.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:47-27:49

Can you give us an update on what that was all about?

    Russ:

    27:49-27:50

    Sure.

    Russ:

    27:50-28:01

And yeah, just thankful for, I mean, like you said, our church is living out what we've been called to do, to do missions work from Jerusalem, Judea, and to the ends of the earth.

    Russ:

    28:01-28:07

And that's what we're doing here with our small groups, you know, our regional outreach to Houston and then to the ends of the earth.

    Russ:

    28:07-28:09

So that's what we're trying to do.

    Russ:

    28:10-28:11

    That's how we're doing it.

    Russ:

    28:11-28:14

We're trying to activate all of you involved in missions work.

    Russ:

    28:14-28:18

And it's not just about some of us, it's about all of us acting together with missions.

    Russ:

    28:18-28:20

Because that's what we're living out.

    Russ:

    28:20-28:21

It's one of the three pillars that we say.

    Russ:

    28:21-28:24

We walk with Christ, work with Christ, worship with Christ.

    Russ:

    28:24-28:24

    Right?

    Russ:

    28:25-28:25

    Did I do it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:26-28:26

    Not bad.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:27-28:27

    Not bad.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:28-28:28

    We'll work on that later.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:29-28:29

    Yeah.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:29-28:30

    Anyways, it wasn't bad.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:30-28:30

Wasn't a bad run at it.

    Russ:

    28:31-28:31

    India.

    Russ:

    28:31-28:34

So, you know, I'll try to be brief.

    Russ:

    28:34-28:36

But, you know, it was great.

    Russ:

    28:36-28:37

You know, God is at work in India.

    Russ:

    28:38-28:38

    It's amazing there.

    Russ:

    28:39-29:39

Satan's at work too because he's trying to prevent us from going there. Day one we're trying to go there I don't even get on a plane and India and Pakistan are at war basically so you know delay and they're shooting down airplanes and blowing each other up that kind of thing so it's like okay here we go but God's in control so a little delay little reroute around Pakistani airspace and we're in India so 18 hours later you know what else would you do with a day of your life besides sitting on a plane right? But we get there you know getting okay the worst part is getting there and coming back so forget that part it's miserable yeah just think about miserable it's it's horrible but you're there it's amazing so we're there we had a two-pronged you know two-point mission we're directed at two things one is building the pastor training facility last year I went there we helped to build the first story of that this year coming back they've completed that first story with all the finishings in it and And we went to construct a second story, which is going to be mostly used for dormitories for those pasture training facilities.

    Russ:

    29:39-29:44

So we're only there for a short week worth of time for what we're actually doing there.

    Russ:

    29:45-29:49

So we're building brick and mortar walls, and we're just working hard.

    Russ:

    29:49-29:51

    So it's fantastic work.

    Russ:

    29:51-29:52

    You're dying.

    Russ:

    29:52-29:55

I was mixing mud on the ground, mud which is mortar.

    Russ:

    29:55-29:59

So half the time I'm like this, shoveling on the ground all the time.

    Russ:

    29:59-30:03

So your back is killing you, but it's a blessing to do that.

    Russ:

    30:04-30:11

So with that first part of the building the track, Pasker Training Facility, I don't know how you do it every week.

    Russ:

    30:12-30:18

Anyway, building that, building, we got to do the dedication this past year.

    Russ:

    30:18-30:21

So we came back, they had the finishing touches on it.

    Russ:

    30:21-30:26

So they still have a little bit of like, they're like 5% left to finish up with outlets and stuff like that.

    Russ:

    30:26-30:29

But what a joy to be a part of that dedication ceremony.

    Russ:

    30:29-30:38

We had a sermon associated with it, just encouraging that prayer and dedication of that facility for God's glory.

    Russ:

    30:38-30:46

And it was surrounded by his community and his network of pastors that he supports and is part of.

    Russ:

    30:46-30:51

So just having all those people, just kind of like this church, we are supported to what we're doing here.

    Russ:

    30:52-30:57

And in the same sense of that pastor training facility, they are all supporting what's going on there.

    Russ:

    30:57-31:03

So, you know, the blessings out of that, you know, they already have 30 applicants that are signed up for the fall coming up.

    Russ:

    31:04-31:07

One of those things is they're going to translate the Bible into a tribal language.

    Russ:

    31:07-31:16

So it's Hindi and Bengali are the two common languages that are in that area, but there's a lot of tribes that don't quite, you know, you get most of it.

    Russ:

    31:16-31:18

Maybe it's kind of like talking Yinzer to somebody.

    Russ:

    31:18-31:50

They understand half of what you say, but the other half are like, "Well, I don't really what that means. But you just kind of roll with it. So being able to have someone come there, they want to have someone come in there and translate the Bible into their native tongue. So what a blessing it is to have that facility in place that can translate the Word of God to open up their hearts to the message of God, the Gospel. So pretty awesome for that first aspect of it. So just emotional for me to be part of that, all the hard work that we put towards that, and then to be able to see it to be used for God's glory.

    Russ:

    31:52-32:00

I'm to see bridges go up, you know, driving it, like, "Oh, yeah, that's cool." But, you know, seeing a building completed, it's going to be used for God's glory. It's, you know, it's but, you know.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:01-32:02

    That is fantastic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:02-32:03

    It's fantastic.

    Russ:

    32:03-32:13

Second part of our part was to encourage the believers. So you work all day and then you go clean up before you eat dinner and then we go out, we go preach to the churches. So pretty awesome.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:13-32:14

And you got to preach, right?

    Russ:

    32:15-32:22

I did. So, yeah, one thing that we got to do was be part of baptism. So I didn't get in the river, but some of our team was in the water.

    Russ:

    32:22-32:25

We had 19 new converts to Christianity.

    Russ:

    32:25-32:28

    So that is amazing.

    Russ:

    32:28-32:30

Praise God for what He's doing there.

    Russ:

    32:32-32:36

And just to celebrate that part of it, how we have baptisms up here, Jeff, it's powerful.

    Russ:

    32:37-32:43

We didn't hear the testimonies and stuff like that, but just here it's one thing to give your life to Christ, but there you can be ostracized.

    Russ:

    32:44-32:54

So if you're family, if you're a son, Mike if you're a son, I don't know if you have son or not, but if you have a son and he goes to become a Christian and you're not, you can kick him out of your house and say, "You're on your own.

    Russ:

    32:54-32:59

I don't agree with your choice to be a Christian, so go." That's how it is across the world.

    Russ:

    32:59-33:03

In America we are so blessed to have the freedom to worship Christ how we are.

    Russ:

    33:04-33:13

Just the boldness that those Christians have over there, that's how we can be praying for them as well if you're thinking about missions work and stuff like that, but the boldness that they have to dedicate their lives to Christ.

    Russ:

    33:14-33:19

But anyways, God's Providence, praise God, I got to preach in the same church.

    Russ:

    33:19-33:29

It was just randomly, like, "Hey, whenever you want me to preach pastor, I'll preach." And he's like, "Tonight." So same church I got to do last year, and connecting with those people, God's got a purpose for that.

    Russ:

    33:29-33:31

So it was good to connect with them.

    Russ:

    33:31-33:36

And every night there was a sermon going on, one different member of the church was preaching.

    Russ:

    33:36-33:40

So it was just great to fellowship with the believers, singing, dancing.

    Russ:

    33:41-34:05

know, worship's a little different over there, so, but it's great. So what a blessing and, you know, kind of tying that what that experience to India was into what we're doing as a church here at a Thailand, you know, I can't wait. You know, like you said, we're developing the scope of what we're actually going to do in Thailand, you know, schedule, we've got that kind of laid out, and then budget, you know, we're going working towards that. So can't wait to pull that all together to share with you all here in the upcoming months as we finish the next five here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:06-34:08

Absolutely. Thank you so much Russ for the update.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:08-34:09

    Thank you for that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:09-34:11

And I wanna close our time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:11-34:12

Will you stay up here with me, Russ?

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:12-34:17

I wanna close our time and I wanna pray and lead us in prayer for missions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:17-34:19

Like I said, you have this list.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:19-34:24

I would encourage you to make this part of your ongoing prayer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:24-34:32

For these things individually, and I would also say for our church collectively, that we would be a church that is always focused on the mission.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:33-34:38

Sometimes it's easy, isn't it, Russ, that you get involved in building projects and these kinds of things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:38-34:44

It's easy to sort of get in our holy huddle and just think about taking care of business at home, but that's not why we exist.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:45-34:50

We exist to get out and spread the gospel and advance the kingdom of Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:50-34:52

    So let's bow our heads.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:52-34:53

    Go ahead and pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:53-34:58

Father, you have given us a very difficult task on one hand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:59-35:02

You've told us to go proclaim the gospel to people that don't want to hear it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:02-35:03

Your word is so clear on that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:04-35:09

told Ezekiel that he was going to hard-headed people, and you were going to make his head even harder.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:10-35:21

Jesus told us that we're going to be his witnesses, and we're going to be delivered over, and imprisoned, and beaten, and killed, and people are going to reject us and hate us just because of our alignment with Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:21-35:26

Who would sign up for something like that, but someone that Jesus Christ has transformed?

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:26-35:31

So Father, we are calling out to you for a Holy Spirit Gospel motivation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:32-35:39

Father, with all these mission opportunities before us, Father, you would reignite in all of us a passion for your mission.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:39-35:50

Every single one of us can be praying about missions, and every single one of us can give towards missions, and some of us are even able to go on mission trips.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:50-35:53

Father, let us not grow weary in doing good.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:53-36:03

Let us not be discouraged, maybe, if we didn't see results that we were looking for in previous mission endeavors, because we know, Father, the results are up to You.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:03-36:07

But for our few short days here on the earth, let them be spent for Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:08-36:11

It's in His glorious name that we pray, Amen.

  3. What are some ways you can lovingly and effectively communicate the truth of God’s coming judgment to people that you know who need to hear it? Be specific!

Open up your Bibles with me, please, to Revelation chapter 14.

    00:41-00:54

We are in a sermon series called "Coming Soon." We're in Revelation chapters 12, 13, and 14, and there's sort of a flashback leading up to the future.

    00:55-01:12

We saw in chapter 12, John saw a vision, and the gist of that vision was Satan has always waged war on Israel and on Christ, And at some point in the future, Satan and his angels are going to battle Michael, the archangel and his angels, and Satan is going to be thrown down to the earth.

    01:12-01:19

And during the tribulation, this upcoming seven-year period, is going to usher in the return of Jesus Christ.

    01:20-01:25

Satan is going to wage war on God's people, especially Israel, like never before.

    01:25-01:32

Chapter 13, last week, describes two men that Satan is going to use to lead the assault on earth.

    01:32-02:04

the Antichrist or the beast and the false prophet another beast that John saw in these visions the false prophet is going to force the world to worship the Antichrist through deception and false signs and through controlling the economy we talked about that last week so chapters 12 and 13 they sort of talk about what Satan is doing and I'm very thankful to get to Revelation 14 now again we're going to talk about what God is doing.

    02:05-02:10

Several years ago at the church which I served previously, I got a phone call.

    02:11-02:36

The administrator said, "Hey, there's a todd online too that wants to talk to a pastor." So I picked up the call and I said, "How can I help you?" And he said, "I'm going to kill myself." And I just wanted to call a church and just make sure that I didn't go straight to hell if I did that because I heard that if you commit suicide, you go straight to hell and I just wanted to be sure before I did that.

    02:36-02:45

I said, "How'd you get this number?" And he said, "I just opened up the phone book and went to the yellow pages." That shows you how many years ago this happened.

    02:45-02:51

I'm like, "You have a phone book?" But he went to the phone book, went to the yellow pages, and just randomly picked a church.

    02:51-03:20

And he said, "I just wanted to be sure I wasn't going straight to hell if I committed suicide." I said, "Before we talk about that, let me ask you a question." I said, "Have you received the salvation that God offers in Jesus Christ?" And he said, "I don't know." I said, "You don't know?" He goes, "No, I don't know." I said, "So you want to jump into eternity not knowing where you're going to land?" And he said, "You should work for Suicide Hotlines." Well, I ended up meeting with the guy.

    03:20-03:22

    It's absolutely a crazy thing.

    03:22-03:25

Here, when I met the guy, I recognized him immediately.

    03:25-03:29

I worked with him at a little greasy spoon diner when I was 15.

    03:30-03:33

I wasn't old enough to drive yet, but there was a little greasy spoon I could walk and I did dishes.

    03:34-03:36

And I worked with this guy.

    03:36-03:38

And it's just like, what the heck?

    03:38-03:41

There's a lot more of the story that I'm not going to bore you with this morning.

    03:41-03:44

But I just wanted to point out this.

    03:44-03:52

You know, when you talk about the gospel, when you talk about matters of eternity, there's always a level of urgency, right?

    03:52-04:03

But when you have a guy say, "I don't know if I know the Lord, but I'm about to kill myself," that really cranked up the level of urgency in that conversation, right?

    04:04-04:35

I couldn't just read him some answer out of a book, like, "Well, here's what John Piper says about that, and have a nice day." Like, there's real urgency here, because this is a life-and-death thing, and while this guy was telling me, "Yeah, I'm about to kill myself, I have this health condition and my, you know, girlfriend left me or what..." I'm thinking to myself, the whole time he's talking, I'm like, "I gotta get this guy's attention." I gotta, over the phone, I gotta shake some sense into this guy.

    04:35-04:38

And that's exactly what Revelation chapter 14 is about.

    04:38-04:49

The earth at this point had seen horrors, ecological disasters and demonic attack, And at this point we saw Revelation 13, the line in the sand has been drawn.

    04:50-04:58

You're either going to receive the mark of the beast and be able to buy and sell and worship the beast or, or you're marked for death from the beast.

    04:59-05:00

The line in the sand has been drawn.

    05:01-05:06

Jesus Christ is in heaven one step away from coming back to the earth.

    05:06-05:12

So to say that when we get to Revelation chapter 14, there's a real sense of urgency, that's, that's an understatement.

    05:12-05:29

Because if you're alive at this point in these events and you've not yet aligned with the beast, but you're thinking about it, because you know, man, it'd be sure easier to align with Him, because I can buy and sell and I don't have to worry.

    05:30-05:33

Man, it sure would be easy to just cash in with the beast.

    05:34-05:35

You need to listen to this message.

    05:36-06:35

And if you're sitting here today or listening to this on the podcast later, and you haven't received Christ, Oh, you've been going to church and you haven't really been opposed to spiritual things, but you haven't really been on fire embracing Jesus Christ You really need to listen if you're saying, you know, I haven't I I'm not one of these crazy You know radical followers of Jesus, but you know pastor Jeff give me one good reason that I should be give me one good reason that I should abandon Everything turn from my sin and receive Jesus Christ and allow him to transform me Give me one good reason I should do that and I'll do you better than that. I'll give you five That's your outline today and you're going to see these right in the text But these are five incentives to receive Jesus Christ today For the people that are going to be living during this age and that might be some of you Some of you sitting right here today on the fence Lukewarm. Five incentives to receive Christ today.

    06:36-06:38

Here's the first one. God keeps his word.

    06:38-06:41

God keeps his word. Look at the first five verses.

    06:41-06:53

John says, "Then I looked and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads.

    06:53-06:59

Then I heard a voice from heaven, like the roar of many waters, and like the sound of loud thunder.

    07:00-07:05

The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps.

    07:06-07:12

They were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders.

    07:12-07:17

No one could learn that song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth.

    07:18-07:22

It is these who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins.

    07:23-07:25

It is these who follow the Lamb wherever He goes.

    07:26-07:31

They've been redeemed from mankind as firstfruits for God and the Lamb.

    07:31-07:42

And in their mouths, no lie was found, for they are lameless." The Lamb is on Mount Zion in this vision.

    07:42-07:44

    Psalm chapter 2 verses 6-9.

    07:44-07:46

    The Lamb on Mount Zion.

    07:46-07:54

Some people want to say, "Well, this is a picture of heaven and this is the heavenly Mount Zion." No, this is earthly Mount Zion.

    07:54-07:56

    He is in Israel.

    07:57-08:04

And just as the unbelievers received the mark of the beast, these 144,000 received the mark of God.

    08:05-08:07

We talked about them in Revelation chapter 7.

    08:08-08:18

12,000 men from each of the tribes of Israel that God sealed and protected to carry out the work of evangelism during the tribulation.

    08:19-08:23

Now, people ask me all the time, can people get saved during the tribulation?

    08:23-08:27

And the answer is, there's never a period in history in which more people will be saved.

    08:28-08:32

But, most of the people who are saved during the tribulation will be killed for their faith.

    08:33-08:36

They'll be executed, but not this group.

    08:36-08:40

Every one of these 144,000 are going to survive.

    08:40-08:44

And they join the heavenly song of redemption.

    08:44-08:48

Do you notice it says, "The voice I heard was like the sound of harpists." What does that mean?

    08:49-08:54

He heard voices, but that was John's way of saying it sounded musical, the worship.

    08:55-08:59

And only these 144,000 were able to learn this song.

    08:59-09:03

Why were they the only ones able to learn this song?

    09:04-09:12

I think it's because they served God during the absolute worst time of persecution and martyrdom in history.

    09:12-09:17

They not only praised Jesus Christ with this song, but they praised him with their lives.

    09:17-09:18

    Did you see that?

    09:18-09:23

It says in verse 4, "They have not defiled themselves with women, for they are virgins.

    09:23-09:29

They follow the Lamb." During the tribulation, sexual sin is going to be more out of control than ever.

    09:30-09:34

And I had a whole thing I was going to talk about with that, but do I really need to sell anybody on that?

    09:34-09:37

Aren't we getting a preview of that right now?

    09:37-09:38

Aren't we just seeing a preview?

    09:39-09:44

The sexual perversion daily just gets worse and worse and worse.

    09:44-09:46

How bad do you think it's going to be at this point?

    09:47-09:49

    They're the morally pure.

    09:50-09:54

And some people say, well, it doesn't necessarily mean they weren't married.

    09:54-10:00

It just says they didn't defile themselves with women and you can be married and marriage isn't a defilement.

    10:00-10:02

And then some of these guys were probably married.

    10:03-10:06

And I don't I don't think so, because verse four says that they're virgins.

    10:07-10:15

If you read the Bible straightforwardly, you know, these are sexually pure men who didn't get married and didn't mess around with women at all.

    10:16-10:17

    They're the first fruits.

    10:17-10:24

It says, verse four, "The first fruits for God and the Lamb," meaning of everyone being saved in Israel.

    10:24-10:26

This group is going to be the first fruits of that.

    10:26-10:28

They're going to be the down payment of salvation.

    10:29-10:31

    Blameless people, not sinless people.

    10:31-10:32

    No one's sinless.

    10:33-10:38

But in this day of worldwide falsehood, deception, these people are going to stand out.

    10:39-10:40

And that's really what blameless means.

    10:40-10:42

We're called to be blameless, by the way.

    10:42-10:43

    That doesn't mean perfect.

    10:43-10:44

    None of us are perfect.

    10:44-10:45

    Blameless means this.

    10:45-10:49

If somebody's going to bring accusations against you, they don't have a leg to stand on.

    10:50-10:51

That's what it means to be blameless.

    10:51-10:54

Like, okay, I see all this stuff, Jeff, but what's the point?

    10:54-10:55

    Here's the point.

    10:55-10:56

    God keeps his promises.

    10:57-11:00

Because God's people are going to be attacked like never before.

    11:00-11:06

But you see back in chapter seven, God promised these 144,000 that they were sealed and they were protected.

    11:06-11:07

    Nothing's going to touch them.

    11:08-11:11

And here, John gets a vision in Revelation 14.

    11:11-11:13

There they are in Mount Zion with the lamb.

    11:13-11:15

And the point is this, God kept his promise.

    11:16-11:18

Here they are, every one of them.

    11:18-11:22

    There wasn't 143,999.

    11:23-11:26

Every single one of them, just as God promised.

    11:26-11:30

And you know, that's something that God and Satan have in common, by the way.

    11:31-11:34

Something God and Satan have in common is they both make promises.

    11:35-11:42

Satan, sin, promises pleasure and satisfaction and ease and comfort and control.

    11:42-11:43

And you know that's why we buy in.

    11:44-11:44

    But it's deceptive.

    11:45-11:45

    It's a trap.

    11:45-11:48

Because sin always takes us to shame.

    11:48-11:51

It always takes us to addiction of some type.

    11:51-11:52

    Ultimately it leads to death.

    11:52-11:55

While God's promises are always and ultimately for our good.

    11:56-11:57

And I would just say this.

    11:57-12:02

Imagine if on your cell phone right now, you had the ability to call somebody that's in hell.

    12:02-12:04

And you had the ability to talk to them for five minutes.

    12:05-15:47

And ask them, you know, your life on earth, you wanted nothing to do with your Creator and you just lived for your sin and for your pleasure and for whatever the heck you wanted out of life, that's all you lived for on the earth. And then I want you to ask them, was it worth it? What do you think they would say? But on the other hand, if we had a phone that could call into heaven, I'm sure you could think of a list of people you'd want to talk to right now, right man? But imagine if you could talk to someone in heaven right now and say, you know what, in your life you sacrificed and you did without and you spent so much time serving in the church and being involved in small groups and out in your community and and studying God's Word. You spent so much time and there was so much hardship in your life but you were still so dedicated to Jesus Christ. Do you think it was worth it? What do you think they would say? Obviously. But the point with 144,000 is just simply this. God keeps His Word. He keeps His Word and that's an incentive to receive Christ today. But secondly, here's another one. God loves you. God loves you. I couldn't think of a different way to word this. Then I thought about the Timur and I thought, you know, maybe that's something we don't hear enough. Especially going through this portion of Revelation. But look at verses 6 and 7. He says, "Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory because the hour of his judgment has come and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water." Okay, so obviously the vision shifts here and we're back to earth. And you're going to see here in these next few verses, there's three angels that bring messages to those who are on the earth. You're like, "Well, I saw these verses you just read, Pastor Jeff, and you said God loves you, but I sure didn't see that in those verses. But this is just another example of God's love and grace because at this point in the tribulation the gospel has been proclaimed to the unsaved by the hundred and forty four thousand and people that come to the Lord through their ministry and the two witnesses remember them Revelation chapter 11 and this is wild stuff here because the Great Commission was given to man but at this point in history the conditions are so extreme that the gospel proclamation calls for a new method. God sends this angel because God is making absolutely sure that everybody hears the gospel message. God is being absolutely sure that every last person on the earth has a chance to repent and he sends this angel to give a two-part sermon, a two-point sermon that basically says, point one, fear and worship God. Point two, time is running out. Interestingly, you might want to circle the word gospel because this is the last time that word's used in the Bible. That's sort of chilling because what that means is for a lot of people, and I would think for most people still alive on the earth in this day, this is the last opportunity they have. Because of the timeline, because of what's coming, God is making absolute, absolutely sure every single person on the earth hears the gospel. So he sends an angel to proclaim it. We've discussed this many times throughout Revelation but if you see nothing else, if you see nothing else in the book of Revelation you have to see a God who never stopped pursuing people all the way to the end. If I were to ask you what's the book of Revelation about most people would say well Revelation is about God's judgment and that's true but I would also say that Revelation is about God's work of reaching people before the final judgment all through the book.

    15:48-15:54

I mean, seriously, at what point seeing everything that's going on, at what point would you and I said, you know what, forget it, I'm done with them.

    15:54-15:54

    I'm done.

    15:54-15:55

    I am done.

    15:55-15:57

They've heard it and they're just getting worse.

    15:58-15:59

    That's not God.

    15:59-16:01

God says, I'm going to, I'm going to give them another chance.

    16:01-16:05

And this time I'm going to, I'm going to send an angel to proclaim the eternal gospel.

    16:06-16:10

And you see, that's good news is hear me no matter what you've done.

    16:10-16:11

    God loves you.

    16:11-16:14

And he wants a relationship with no matter what you've done.

    16:15-16:33

And I've talked to so many people and say, "Oh yeah, Pastor Jeff, you know, I thought about getting right with God, but I really did some bad things and I messed up my life so bad." And I've just talked to so many people that think they've sinned so bad that they've somehow disqualified themselves from God's love.

    16:33-16:43

But the death of Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, both proved His love for you and provided the way for you to have that relationship.

    16:44-16:45

And you see, that's the good news of the gospel.

    16:46-16:48

Salvation is not based on what you do.

    16:49-16:51

Your salvation is based on what He did.

    16:51-16:56

Your sin, whatever you've done, it's not more powerful than the blood of Jesus Christ.

    16:56-16:57

    It's not.

    16:57-17:05

You did not commit a sin that is so heinous that the blood of Jesus Christ can't forgive it 'cause God loves you.

    17:05-17:09

Your salvation is not based on what you do.

    17:09-17:10

It's based on what He has done.

    17:11-17:12

And you don't keep your salvation.

    17:13-17:15

You don't maintain your salvation by what you do.

    17:16-17:17

    That's on God too.

    17:17-17:26

And that is such good news because if salvation was based on me, I'd lose it daily, countless times a day because I fail.

    17:26-17:31

But the reality is salvation is based on what God has done for you and He never fails.

    17:31-17:32

    That's security.

    17:32-17:36

The five incentives to receive Christ today, the first one is this, God keeps His word.

    17:36-17:38

    Secondly, God loves you.

    17:38-17:41

And thirdly, earthly things will fail.

    17:41-18:29

things will fail. Look at verse 8. Okay, so God during the tribulation sends an angel. Well, how do we know that's during the tribulation? Well, because it says he's proclaiming to those who dwell on the earth. God sends another angel. Verse 8 says, "Another angel, a second, followed saying, 'Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality. It seems like for the most part the first angel is ignored. This angel's following bringing the bad news. Like well what's Babylon? Babylon is the name for the Antichrist's Empire. It's a symbol of rebellion against God. The first Babylon was built clear back in Genesis chapters 10 and 11 by a guy named Nimrod.

    18:30-18:52

Do you know that name was in the Bible? That had to have been tough for him. Like became an insult. But he built the Tower of Babel. And what was his purpose in building the Tower of Babel? He wanted to unite the world politically and religiously. One center. God says, "Build the earth." And he's like, "No. Right here.

    18:52-19:38

We're establishing our own kingdom. We're establishing our own empire." And that was the first Babylon. And you see at the end of the world, that's going to happen again. The Antichrist is going to say, "No, I'm establishing my political and religious empire right here everything right here we're going to talk all about that in chapters 18 and 19 by the way but the whole world look at this picture okay so you have Babylon this religious political empire and described as she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality I'm not going to go into detail but you understand that picture right the whole world is it's a it's a crass picture just being honest The whole world is getting drunk and partying with this woman.

    19:38-19:45

And this angel shows up to say, "Hey, this empire is going down." It's going down because earthly things are going to fail.

    19:45-19:53

Even this incredible-looking empire that's coming, fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great.

    19:53-19:58

By the way, that thing that you love more than God, someday that's going to be ancient history too.

    19:58-20:10

You know, when people refuse to come to Jesus Christ, When you share the gospel or invite the church or the small group or whatever, and somebody's completely not interested, it's always for the same reason.

    20:10-20:14

It always is. People refuse to come to Christ, it's always the same reason.

    20:15-20:18

It's because they prefer their sin over Jesus. That's why.

    20:18-20:25

Whether it's sexual sin, like pornography, or being involved in a relationship they know they shouldn't be involved in.

    20:25-20:29

Maybe it's greed, maybe it's addiction, maybe it's selfishness.

    20:30-20:32

All of those things are going down.

    20:33-20:38

All of those things are going to crash down around you and ruin your life now.

    20:38-20:45

And it's going to cause you to forfeit eternity in heaven because no one has ever ultimately benefited from sin.

    20:45-20:46

    Nobody, nobody.

    20:47-20:49

Not in the short term, not in the long term.

    20:50-20:53

There's nobody that can stand up and give testimony and say, "You know what?

    20:53-20:55

    I saw what God said.

    20:55-20:58

I knew what I should have done, but I decided I was gonna do it my own way.

    20:58-21:04

I decided, you know, my sin, my selfishness, I'm gonna live for me, and it was awesome.

    21:05-21:05

    You're not gonna hear that.

    21:06-21:12

Today's the day to repent, to turn from your house of cards Babylon, the unshakable kingdom of Jesus Christ.

    21:13-21:22

Because this angel reminds these people in the future and tells us today that thing that you're loving more than God, it's going down.

    21:22-21:23

    Earthly things fail.

    21:24-21:24

    That's another incentive.

    21:25-21:26

    Fourthly, jot this down.

    21:26-21:28

Fourth incentive is the alternative is horrific.

    21:29-21:32

Like, well, I hear what you're saying, Pastor Jeff, but I'm just not interested.

    21:33-21:35

    I'm just really not interested.

    21:35-21:37

Well, look at verses nine through 11.

    21:37-21:55

And another angel, a third, followed them saying with a loud voice, if anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God's wrath for full strength into the cup of his anger.

    21:56-22:04

And he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.

    22:05-22:11

And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever, and they have no rest, day or night.

    22:11-22:16

These worshipers of the beast and its image, and whoever receives the mark of its name.

    22:17-22:23

This third angel proclaims the consequences for following the Antichrist, which was shown by receiving the mark of the beast.

    22:24-22:28

At this point in Revelation, you know, the beast is threatened, right?

    22:28-22:32

Hey, if you want to buy or sell, you're going to come through me.

    22:32-22:37

If you refuse to worship me, worship the image, you're going to die.

    22:37-22:40

So he's threatened, but this penalty is even worse.

    22:41-22:52

And if there's a theme verse that everybody who comes to Christ must preach throughout the tribulation, it's this verse, Matthew 10, 28, jot that down.

    22:52-22:57

where Jesus said, "And do not fear those who kill the body, that cannot kill the soul.

    22:57-23:09

Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell." This angel reminds us that if someone chooses to drink the cup of rebellion, he's also going to have to drink the cup of God's wrath.

    23:09-23:10

    Did you see that?

    23:10-23:11

    Verse 10, look at this.

    23:12-23:18

"He will drink the wine of God's wrath for full strength into the cup of his anger." Full strength.

    23:18-23:19

    In other words, not diluted.

    23:20-23:51

about three weeks two or three weeks ago they're cleaning up the house and you know I'm like I'll clean the bathroom I know applause right no so I'm grabbing the supplies out of the closet and I grabbed this bottle of stuff this cleaner and I start to spray the cleaner in the bathroom and as soon as I took that first spray I about choked oh it's about that time I hear Aaron holler from the next room oh by the way if you're using this spray in the bottle that He's diluted.

    23:51-23:55

It's like you're gonna put one drop of that in like 10 gallons of water.

    23:55-24:01

People were complimenting how our bathroom smelled from Westmoreland County because it wasn't diluted.

    24:01-24:07

But you see here, God's wrath will not be diluted but poured full strength.

    24:08-24:08

    What does that mean?

    24:09-24:12

Well, in the past, God's wrath was always tempered with mercy.

    24:13-24:17

And when you get to these last events in Revelation, mercy's over, it's done.

    24:17-24:26

God's like, I have given you every single chance to repent, even sending an angel flying over your heads telling you to receive the gospel.

    24:27-24:27

    Mercy's over.

    24:28-24:33

And here we have yet another passage of Scripture that teaches that hell is eternal.

    24:33-24:40

And there have always been unsaved critics and skeptics that think that's fairy tale stuff, and that doesn't bother me.

    24:40-24:48

But the thing that does bother me is seeing the trend of more and more and more churches denying what the Scripture very plainly teaches about hell.

    24:49-24:57

"Oh, it's not eternal, it's temporary, it doesn't exist, it's just a scare tactic." Note this verse down, Matthew 25, 46.

    24:57-25:05

In that verse, you can look this up later, in that verse Jesus said, "Hell lasts as long as heaven." The same word "eternal" in the Greek.

    25:05-25:13

I've never met anybody that says, "You know, I think heaven's temporary, I think you go there for a while, and then you go somewhere else, and you stop existing." I've never met that guy.

    25:13-25:20

Interestingly, Jesus used the same word "eternal" to describe heaven as he uses to describe hell, and people want to deny that hell is eternal.

    25:20-25:30

But here again in Revelation, this angel reminds us the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever and they have no rest day or night.

    25:31-25:35

This is the fate of all believers, all unbelievers, all believers in the beast.

    25:35-25:38

This is the fate of all unbelievers in Jesus Christ, however.

    25:39-25:44

If unbelievers in the past or unbelievers in our day lived during the days of the beast, they'd just receive the mark of death.

    25:45-25:51

The Bible says you need to consider the cost of following Jesus, but this angel reminds us that we need to consider the cost of not following.

    25:52-25:53

    The alternative is horrific.

    25:53-25:58

And number five, another incentive, follow Jesus Christ today to receive Jesus Christ today.

    25:58-26:00

Number five is you can face death without fear.

    26:01-26:03

You can face death without fear.

    26:03-26:05

Look at verses 12 and 13.

    26:05-26:19

It says, "Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus." And I heard a voice from heaven saying, "Write this, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.

    26:19-26:35

Blessed indeed says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them." So in the midst of this judgment, John gives sort of an interlude here, and is told to write down this reminder to assure believers of who they are, and encourage them to persevere.

    26:36-26:38

But I want you to look especially at verse 12.

    26:38-26:41

Here is a call for the endurance of the saints.

    26:41-26:44

Those who... I want you to see here, I want you to see this.

    26:45-26:49

This is how saints are defined according to God's Word.

    26:49-26:51

They do two things. Do you see it?

    26:51-26:55

First of all, those who say it out loud, "Keep the commandments of God," right?

    26:55-27:00

What's the second thing? Say it. "Faith in Jesus." Do you see both of those?

    27:01-27:13

Because most people, most Christians that I talk to, seem to go to extreme ends and totally miss the biblical view of what it means to be a saint or a follower of Jesus.

    27:13-27:17

You have one side that says, "You're saved by good works. You've got to do good.

    27:17-27:29

You've got to do good works. You have to do good works and that's how you're saved." While the other side says, "Look, all you need is faith." Works are not important and even encouraging works is legalism.

    27:30-27:33

If you're encouraging people to work for the Lord, you're being legalistic. Shame on you.

    27:34-27:40

Well, the reality, as we've already discussed, you cannot earn or keep your salvation by keeping the commandments.

    27:40-27:42

    It is by faith alone.

    27:42-27:44

    But faith is never alone.

    27:44-27:48

You need to see faith in works like fire and smoke.

    27:49-27:54

You don't have smoke alone, but you never have a fire without smoke either.

    27:55-27:56

And here's how Jesus put it.

    27:57-28:01

How does faith and keeping the commandments, how does that gel?

    28:01-28:03

Here's how Jesus put it in John 14, 21.

    28:04-28:06

It doesn't get any more straightforward than this.

    28:06-28:14

Jesus said, "Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me." Do you love Jesus? Do you love Jesus?

    28:14-28:19

Like, "Yeah, I love Jesus!" Well, Jesus said if you do, you keep his word and you keep his commandments.

    28:20-28:22

And you can make that backwards too.

    28:22-28:25

Like, do you keep the commandments of Jesus?

    28:25-28:29

Like, "Nah." Okay, well then you don't love Jesus, according to him.

    28:29-28:36

I'm like, are you diligent about keeping God's word and striving to live the kind of life that God's called his people to live?

    28:36-28:37

    Like, yeah, that is the...

    28:37-28:45

I feel, I feel pastor Jeff, but that's my passion is to always try to grow and to do what the Word of God has to say.

    28:46-28:47

Well, that's evidence that you love Jesus.

    28:48-28:49

    Faith without works is dead.

    28:49-28:51

And so are works without faith, just as death.

    28:51-28:54

Alright, that part was bonus. Here's what I wanted to say about that.

    28:54-28:58

Believers during the tribulation, like all true believers, are going to persevere.

    28:58-29:00

And those who die in the Lord, look at this.

    29:00-29:05

Those who die in the Lord receive, verse 13, rest and reward.

    29:05-29:11

They may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them." There's nothing to fear in death if you're a believer in Christ.

    29:12-29:12

    Nothing to fear.

    29:13-29:16

Death is just a glorious graduation ceremony for you.

    29:17-29:23

And the reward? The reward is according to your labor, not the apparent fruit of your labor.

    29:23-29:26

The fruit of your labor might come long after you're gone.

    29:26-29:30

So if you're sitting here today and you're like, "Yeah, Pastor Jeff, I see what that's saying, but I'm going to be honest with you.

    29:31-29:39

I'm no Francis Chan, I'm no Charles Spurgeon, I'm no John Piper, I'm not really making this huge impact.

    29:40-29:46

I'm just sort of faithfully serving the Lord in this little church, and I teach the kids, and I lead a small group.

    29:47-29:55

I don't really see the impact. Well, you don't know the impact that's going to come from the people that you're impacting.

    29:56-30:02

Some of our labors, think about this, might actually bear fruit after the rapture.

    30:02-30:05

Some of our labors might actually bear fruit during the tribulation.

    30:05-30:10

Urgency. There are so many incentives to receive Jesus Christ today.

    30:10-30:13

In church, there are so many incentives to serve Jesus Christ today.

    30:14-30:14

    Urgency.

Small Group Discussion
Read Revelation 12

GROUP

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. For what purpose did God send the 3 angels (v6-11)? What does this tell you about God?

  3. Some people believe “you must keep the commandments” to be saved, while others believe that it is legalism to even encourage “obedience to the commandments”. The latter would say “faith in Jesus is all that matters”, not obedience to God and God’s Word.

Read verse 12 carefully, considering the context.

How does “keeping the commandments” and having “faith in Jesus” seem to coexist?

How do you reconcile the two being side by side in this verse?

All right, you have your Bibles? Open them up to Revelation chapter 13.

    01:08-01:11

Revelation chapter 13. While you're turning there, quick review.

    01:11-01:20

We're at a servant series called "Coming Soon." And we've been looking at the judgment of God that is coming upon the earth.

    01:20-01:23

When we got to chapter 12, it began a flashback.

    01:24-01:28

We saw that Satan has always waged war on Israel and on Christ.

    01:28-01:44

And at some point in the future, Satan and his angels are going to battle Michael, the archangel, and his angels, and the result is Satan is thrown down to the earth during the tribulation, and he's going to wage war on God's people, especially Israel, like never before. These days are coming.

    01:45-01:52

Today we're going to look at chapter 13, which describes the two men that Satan is going to use to lead the assault on the earth.

    01:52-01:56

But before we talk about two men, I want to talk about one cow.

    01:56-01:58

This is a really serious one, actually.

    01:58-02:00

    August 28, 2018.

    02:01-02:05

In Israel was born a spotless red heifer.

    02:05-02:06

    What's the significance?

    02:07-02:12

Well, a spotless red heifer is needed to sacrifice for the purification of the temple.

    02:13-02:17

You know, Israel has been waiting for 2000 years for a spotless red heifer.

    02:17-02:17

    Did you know that?

    02:18-02:21

They thought they had one in the mid 90s, that they checked and checked and checked.

    02:21-02:23

Oh, and there was a little flaw, disqualified.

    02:24-02:27

Then around 2005, I think there was another one.

    02:27-02:29

We have our spotless red heifer.

    02:29-02:31

They found a blemish on that one, disqualified.

    02:31-02:37

August 28th last year, one was born that they have checked and rechecked and rechecked and rechecked and it is spotless.

    02:38-02:39

    And that is huge.

    02:39-02:40

    Waiting 2,000 years.

    02:40-02:43

Now the groundwork is laid for the temple to be rebuilt.

    02:44-02:46

500 Levites have been trained for service.

    02:47-02:49

    Temple furnishings have been prepared.

    02:49-02:51

They were just waiting on the cow.

    02:51-02:53

And it looks like it's here.

    02:53-02:55

That was August 28th, 2018, people.

    02:56-02:57

    This was reported.

    02:57-03:05

This was reported December 4th of 2018, at least a particular article that I read, but it looks like the Ark of the Covenant may have been found.

    03:06-03:14

I know right now, right now, somebody's like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff's gonna wear a tinfoil hat." You got a computer, you got a smartphone, Google this stuff, okay?

    03:14-03:20

You're gonna find there are lots of things happening in the world right now that line up with what this says.

    03:21-03:25

But December 4th, 2018, that was the report that I read, it looks like the Ark of the Covenant has been found.

    03:25-03:26

    Like, well, where is it?

    03:27-03:30

St. Mary's of Zion Church in Axum, Ethiopia.

    03:30-03:34

It's guarded 24/7 by guards who work until death.

    03:35-03:41

Nobody's allowed to see it because they say it's too holy for impure eyes to gaze upon it.

    03:42-03:48

So it's shut in the room, it's guarded 24/7, and again, these guards guard it until death.

    03:48-03:51

There have been two witnesses actually that have seen it.

    03:51-03:58

One was an administrator for the church And he saw it because one of the guards had died and they were training a new guard.

    03:59-04:02

So in this process of training, he was able to look at the Ark.

    04:03-04:09

And the report is, either it's the Ark of the Covenant, or it is a crazy good facsimile.

    04:09-04:11

But regardless, here's what you have to understand.

    04:12-04:15

They think it's the Ark of the Covenant, because they are guarding it 24/7.

    04:15-04:18

And if they thought it was a fake, nobody's going to sign up for that job, right?

    04:19-04:23

I think there's obvious significance there, but here's where it really blows your mind.

    04:24-04:27

in a church in Ethiopia today looks like.

    04:27-04:37

Isaiah chapter 18 prophesies that the day is coming that the Ethiopians are going to bring a present to the place of the name of the Lord on Mount Zion.

    04:37-04:39

What do you think that present might be?

    04:39-04:48

Could it be, once the temple is rebuilt, which we have the heifer, could it be that the present the Ethiopians bring is the most important piece of furniture that goes in the temple?

    04:48-04:56

For all of these revelation events to happen that we've been covering these past few months, the temple has to be rebuilt and the signs are everywhere.

    04:57-05:03

Chapter 13 gives us more signs that "coming soon" isn't just a name of a sermon series.

    05:04-05:07

"Coming soon" is reality. Jesus Christ is coming back.

    05:07-05:11

Are you ready for that? Are you ready for that? He's coming back!

    05:11-05:16

Okay, this isn't fairy tale stuff. We're watching it happen in front of us.

    05:16-05:17

    He's coming back.

    05:18-05:21

These passages we're looking at today describe the beast.

    05:21-05:24

He was intro'd in chapter 11, verse 7.

    05:24-05:26

Remember, he killed the two witnesses.

    05:26-05:29

The beast is also called the Antichrist.

    05:29-05:33

Now, this beast we're going to see in Revelation chapter 13, there's actually two.

    05:33-05:42

But the Antichrist is a man that represents an empire in the same way that Hitler represented the Nazis, the Third Reich.

    05:42-05:45

And the Antichrist is going to be demonically empowered.

    05:46-05:53

And as soon as you hear the word Antichrist, you think, "Bad guy, super villain type stuff, right?" He's going to come on the scene as a popular world leader.

    05:53-05:55

People are going to love this guy.

    05:55-05:57

He's going to be a celebrity.

    05:57-06:00

The Bible says he's going to make a peace treaty with Israel.

    06:00-06:01

People are going to be saying, "He's not bad.

    06:01-06:02

Look at him. He's bringing peace.

    06:03-06:08

Look, he's great." But halfway through the tribulation, he's going to show his true colors.

    06:09-06:12

He's going to rule the world and he's going to demand worship.

    06:12-06:14

We're going to see that so clearly in this passage today.

    06:15-06:24

He's going to break the treaty with Israel And that is going to launch Satan's assault that results in Israel fleeing into the wilderness that we talked about last week in chapter 12.

    06:25-06:29

To the Antichrist, he's described, this isn't the only place in the Bible, do some more reading.

    06:30-06:40

Daniel chapter seven, chapter nine, chapter 11, Jesus talked about the Antichrist in Matthew chapter 24, Paul talked about the Antichrist in 2 Thessalonians chapter two, okay?

    06:40-06:42

    This is a major deal.

    06:42-06:51

And there's a lot of stuff in this passage, So I just want to encourage you to ask the Lord right now to help your heart and mind tune into His Word.

    06:51-06:53

Can we do that? Can we just stop for a second?

    06:53-07:01

And Father, all of Your Word is important in some passages, Father, for me are much harder to read and understand and interpret and teach than others.

    07:01-07:05

And this is a tough passage, because there's a lot of stuff going on.

    07:06-07:09

There's a lot of prophecies fulfilled. There's just so much happening, God.

    07:09-07:20

So I pray for myself and I pray for my brothers and sisters here, for our hearts and our minds right now, distraction free, let us regard your word for what you said it is, the Word of the Lord.

    07:20-07:24

Let us regard it with the same seriousness that you call us to.

    07:25-07:28

Let us be edified, let us tremble before it, let it transform us.

    07:28-07:29

    In Jesus' name.

    07:29-07:31

And all of God's people said, Amen.

    07:32-07:37

The Antichrist is going to have a right-hand man, the false prophet, we're going to talk about him, he shows up in this passage.

    07:37-08:20

and before we look at the text I want to remind you one more thing we've been saying over and over and over I got to remind you but in Revelation John is describing what he's seeing more than he's explaining what he's seeing and if you've been with us in this series you've seen that a lot of these images come from the Old Testament but it's okay to go to Revelation kind of scratching your head a little bit and saying he's just sort of describing what he's seeing. It's okay. We want to read the Bible, what's our word? Straightforwardly, right? Straightforwardly. And in this passage, John said this was a sign. And this sign is that he started in chapter 12, verse 1. It's continuing here in chapter 13. This is a sign.

    08:20-08:40

So in your outline, if you want to take notes, the coming of the two beasts. First of all, we're going to talk about the beast from the sea, the Antichrist. Let's look at verses John says, "And I saw a beast rising out of the sea with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads.

    08:41-08:47

And the beast that I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth.

    08:47-08:56

And to it the dragon," that's Satan, "gave his power and his throne and great authority." It says the beast comes from the sea.

    08:57-09:02

Well, chapter 11, verse 7, chapter 17, verse 8, says the beast comes from the abyss.

    09:03-09:05

Does C here represent the abyss?

    09:05-09:07

Is that part of the sign?

    09:07-09:12

His description is familiar, very familiar to Satan's description in chapter 12, verse 3.

    09:12-09:22

Difference being, the beast is said to have 10 diadems, which represents 10 nations that are going to be united under the Antichrist.

    09:23-09:25

Which by the way, do a Google search on that.

    09:25-09:30

the president of France, recently has started a 10-nation military conglomerate.

    09:30-09:32

    Interesting, isn't it?

    09:32-09:33

    Maybe I don't need a tinfoil hat.

    09:34-09:38

Maybe God's word is actually coming true right under our noses.

    09:38-09:40

But here, this is absolutely fascinating to me.

    09:41-09:43

    John gives a description here.

    09:43-09:44

    Did you see the animals?

    09:44-09:45

    I'm sure you caught that.

    09:45-09:47

He says, "The beast also was like a leopard.

    09:47-10:01

Its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's." So the description of these animals, the leopard, the bear, the lion, those are the same images of world empires that Daniel describes in Daniel chapter 7.

    10:01-10:03

But here's where it gets really wild.

    10:03-10:09

As Daniel's describing these coming empires, Daniel's looking forward in time.

    10:09-10:13

So he sees a lion, a bear, and a leopard.

    10:13-10:18

And as John is describing them, he describes the leopard, the bear, and the lion.

    10:18-10:22

He describes them in reverse order because he's looking back in time.

    10:22-10:29

The point here is Antichrist's empire is going to be a composite of all of the preceding empires.

    10:30-10:34

It's the fourth beast in Daniel, the most horrible one of all.

    10:34-10:36

    That's Daniel chapter 7, verse 7.

    10:37-10:39

God likes to work through people, and you know Satan does too.

    10:39-10:45

The Bible says that in these days Satan's going to give his power and authority to this man, the Antichrist.

    10:46-10:46

    Let's continue.

    10:46-10:47

    Look at verse 3.

    10:48-11:18

its head seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshipped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast. And they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?" We're going to see this come up again a few more times. But the Antichrist is going to commit the ultimate blasphemy, because he's He's going to try to imitate the ultimate work of Jesus Christ, which is his death and resurrection.

    11:19-11:21

The Antichrist is going to emulate that.

    11:21-11:22

So that raises a whole bunch of questions.

    11:23-11:28

Is the Antichrist literally going to die and resurrect, or is it just going to be fake?

    11:29-11:36

Personally, I lean towards the fake side because 2 Thessalonians 2.9 talks about false signs and wonders.

    11:37-11:41

I don't believe that Satan has the power over life and death the way Jesus Christ does.

    11:41-11:48

I believe, this is me personally, I believe it's a big act, but it's a big act that the entire world buys.

    11:48-11:57

He's going to get a huge following because the world is going to be mesmerized by this man who died and resurrected from the dead.

    11:58-11:59

    Can you see the blasphemy?

    11:59-12:05

And he's going to use that to set himself up to be God, according to 2 Thessalonians 2.4.

    12:05-12:06

    Do you see the blasphemy?

    12:06-12:11

Here's a man who died and resurrected and said he was God, imitating Jesus Christ.

    12:11-12:13

Oh, and the blasphemy continues. That's what verse 4 is all about.

    12:14-12:25

Do you see the world in worshiping the beast says, look at these last two phrases, "Who is like the beast and who can fight against it?" Does that sound familiar? Those are Old Testament concepts reserved only for God.

    12:26-12:28

Who is like God? Who is like the Lord of Heaven?

    12:29-12:31

And that's what the world's going to say about the beast.

    12:31-12:34

Who is like him? Nothing is like him. He's awesome.

    12:34-12:36

    It's blasphemy, but that's what's coming.

    12:36-13:22

Look at verse 5. It says, "And the beast was given a mouth, blasphemies against God, blaspheming His name and His dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also, it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them, and authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on the earth will worship it. Everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation So again, the Antichrist is going to viciously attack those who come to faith in Christ during the Tribulation while the rest of the world worships him and cheers him on.

    13:22-13:39

But notice it says, "It was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them." Just to remind you that this conquer is obviously physically, not spiritually, because we see right in this passage, we get the reminder that true believers are secure in Jesus Christ.

    13:39-13:44

If you belong to Jesus Christ, He wrote you down in His book, and nothing can take you out of that.

    13:44-13:46

We're going to talk more about that in a second, so just hang on.

    13:47-13:52

But look at verse 9. It says, "If anyone has an ear, let him hear." Now hang on a second.

    13:52-13:56

Here's another reason I believe that the church has been raptured before the Tribulation.

    13:57-14:00

Do you remember when the church was being addressed in chapters 2 and 3?

    14:00-14:01

Do you remember what the repeating phrase was?

    14:02-14:09

"If anyone has an ear to hear." What the Spirit says to the church is, and you notice here, the Spirit and church isn't in the phrase.

    14:10-14:16

It just says, "If anyone has an ear, let him hear." It says, "If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes.

    14:16-14:23

If anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain." Here's a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

    14:23-14:29

So during these days, and the reason these verses are in here, you know how people typically think.

    14:29-14:32

Government oppression, and it's going to get worse, you're going to see here.

    14:33-14:36

Things getting chaotic, anarchy, like we're going to fight back.

    14:39-14:43

We're going to assault the White House." No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

    14:43-14:46

Christians are never called to be violent revolutionaries.

    14:47-14:49

I believe that's what verse 10 is talking about.

    14:49-14:50

    Say, "Look, we don't retaliate.

    14:51-14:54

We don't stage an assault against a wicked government.

    14:54-15:04

We have to commit ourselves to God even in the worst times of persecution, like Jesus Christ who continued to trust himself to him who judges justly." We trust God. We trust God.

    15:04-15:06

That's the first beast, the beast from the sea, the antichrist.

    15:06-15:10

Let's talk about the second beast here, the beast from the earth, the false prophet.

    15:10-15:22

Verse 11 says, "Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth, and it had two horns like a lamb, and it spoke like a dragon." The Bible says there's many, many antichrists, which ultimately leads to the big one.

    15:22-15:23

So it is with false prophets.

    15:24-15:27

There are millions of false prophets out there, and it ultimately leads to the big one.

    15:28-16:39

But just as, and here's where the blasphemy continues, just as God has revealed himself as Father and Son and Holy Spirit. Here again Satan is going to try to emulate that, with Satan himself being the Father, the Antichrist as his Son, resurrection from the dead and all. The ultimate false prophet here completes the Satanic Trinity. So the Antichrist is going to be more of a political leader and the false prophet is going to be the religious leader. And he's the one that's going to convince people to worship the beast. And like the Antichrist, the false prophet, is going to be loved, he's going to be popular, he's going to be a celebrity, and he's going to appear gentle and meek. He has little horns like a lamb, like a precious little lamb. Like how harmless is a lamb, right? And that's how he's going to appear. He's just harmless. He's nothing scary about that guy. That's what he looks like, but did you catch what his voice is like? His voice is the voice of the dragon, meaning he's speaking for the devil, right? He's just speaking Satan's words. Verse 12, "It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed.

    16:39-17:17

It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people. And by the signs it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast. It deceives those who dwell on the earth, telling them to make an image of the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived." There it is again. "And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain." Again, the false prophet's mission is directing the world to worship the Antichrist. Did you see that in the text?

    17:17-17:30

Worship him. He is awesome. He resurrected from the dead. He is awesome. And he's going to deceive people. And at this point in Revelation, think of the horrors that people have seen.

    17:30-17:35

All the quote-unquote ecological disasters that they'll just call natural disasters.

    17:35-18:51

Think of the demonic assault that they have seen at this point. Those horrific images of those demons. What was that? Revelation 9, right? Think of everything that they've seen and now the Antichrist comes along and says, "Look, we've had a rough couple of years here, but everything is going to be fine if you just worship Him. We have a Savior that is going to take care of, and this false prophet's favorite sermon is the resurrection of the Antichrist. Again, real or fake, the world's going to buy it. Can we wrap our brains around how blasphemous this is? That the world is going to fawn over this message, "Here's a man who was dead and rose from the dead, and he deserves your worship!" You realize that same message is being preached about Jesus Christ in churches today and the world thinks you're an idiot for sitting here. But in these days, the same message is going to be given about somebody else and everybody's gonna be like, "Bravo! Who is like him? He is awesome!" And it's just Satan's way of thinking, "Look, you couldn't pull this off God, but I could. My resurrected one has a worldwide following." Wow. He imitates the witnesses, the false prophets. You saw You saw the miracles, the signs and wonders he's permitted to perform just like the two witnesses with the fire.

    18:51-18:54

All of these signs and wonders misleading people.

    18:55-18:56

    And the blasphemy continues.

    18:56-19:05

You saw the false prophet is going to order the construction of an idol or an image probably in Jerusalem near the temple.

    19:05-19:09

This is probably the abomination of desolation that the Bible talks about.

    19:09-19:11

But a giant idol is going to be constructed.

    19:12-19:21

And somehow, according to this vision that John is describing for us, the false prophet is going to put breath or life into this idol.

    19:22-19:22

    How does that happen?

    19:23-19:23

    I don't know.

    19:24-19:26

Some people say, "Oh, I know how it happens.

    19:26-19:28

It's like robotics and animatronic, right?

    19:28-19:30

Like, you ever been to Disney World?

    19:30-19:33

You go on those rides and you see the dancing puppets.

    19:33-19:39

It's like, "Yeah, it's a small world after all!" And some people think that's what they're going to do with this statue.

    19:39-19:41

Do you think people are going to buy that?

    19:41-19:44

Do you think the world's going to be like, "Yeah, let's worship that"?

    19:44-19:51

I think there's something demonic happening here that is more convincing than just animatronics, no matter how good animatronics are today.

    19:52-19:59

There's something demonic happening here because this statue, this idol speaks and somehow destroys those who won't worship it.

    19:59-20:00

Like how? The text doesn't say.

    20:01-20:03

But John's just describing what he's seeing in this sign.

    20:03-20:04

    Look at verse 16.

    20:05-20:26

Verse 16 says, "And it causes all, also, excuse me, also, "It causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast, or the number of its name.

    20:27-20:43

This calls for wisdom. Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666." Back in Revelation 7, God marked His people to protect them.

    20:43-20:45

    Revelation 7, verses 2 and 3.

    20:45-20:48

More blasphemy. The Antichrist is going to mark his people.

    20:48-20:50

The false prophet is going to mark the Antichrist's people.

    20:51-20:56

And unbelievers are going to receive this mark, seemingly, for their protection and security.

    20:56-20:59

And again, think of everything that the earth endured at this point.

    20:59-21:08

The drought, three and a half years, ecological disasters, water to blood, all of these things that have happened, supplies are already in high demand.

    21:08-21:16

But now, even the act of purchasing, just the act of purchasing itself has a price.

    21:17-21:22

Because at this point, the mark of the beast is the only thing that's going to enable someone to buy or sell.

    21:22-21:24

There's not going to be cash or checks.

    21:25-21:25

    Irrelevant.

    21:25-21:26

    They will be irrelevant.

    21:27-21:35

And I don't know if there's a portion of Revelation that has more discussion or more ideas, right Mike, than these few verses right here.

    21:35-21:37

What is the mark of the beast?

    21:37-21:40

Is it a barcode that's put on the hand or the head?

    21:40-21:44

Is it a computer chip that is implanted in the hand?

    21:44-21:48

Is it a computer chip that maybe is tied into the worldwide computer system?

    21:49-21:54

It's sort of like having Apple Pay built into your person somehow.

    21:54-22:05

Another thought was, as John is watching this and describing, is it somehow tied into the technology that we have in our day for facial recognition and fingerprint verification?

    22:05-22:06

    Think about that.

    22:06-22:11

If I want to buy something on my iPhone, how does it ask me to verify payment?

    22:11-22:12

    Fingerprint.

    22:12-22:14

Is that the mark that John saw on the hand?

    22:14-22:20

Another thing that is in development right now, again, tinfoil hat, Google this, facial recognition.

    22:20-22:27

If you want to verify a purchase, just put your face in front of the computer and it'll recognize your face and that'll verify your purchase.

    22:27-22:31

Is that the mark that John saw with head and hand?

    22:31-22:35

Regardless, and we can talk about this all day, but let's not miss the forest for the trees here.

    22:36-22:38

This is about control. It's about control.

    22:38-22:42

It's another way that people are going to be forced to worship the Antichrist.

    22:43-22:50

And again, church, in these days, it's going to look so good and convenient, isn't it?

    22:50-22:51

Like, how convenient would that be?

    22:52-22:54

I don't have to worry about a checkbook. I don't have to worry about cash.

    22:55-22:56

I don't have to worry about fraud.

    22:56-22:59

I can verify my payments with my fingerprint in my face.

    22:59-23:01

    Nobody can take my money.

    23:02-23:07

It looks good and convenient, but the price in these days is going to be total alignment with the Antichrist.

    23:08-23:12

You know, a generation or two ago, this stuff seemed pretty inconceivable, didn't it?

    23:13-23:20

What I mean is, if you were to ask your great-grandparents to describe how they think this was going to happen, what would they have said?

    23:20-23:27

They'd go, "I don't know how that's going to happen." But in our day, can't you imagine dozens of different scenarios that would make this happen?

    23:27-23:30

Things that are happening right now, technology-wise?

    23:31-23:40

We see it's not only possible, but the mechanisms that allow these things to happen are being developed right this minute.

    23:41-23:51

And Church, again, Google this stuff, because this stuff I'm sharing with you today is not some fringe conspiracy theory, chicken little fairy tale stuff.

    23:52-23:53

    Drop these things down.

    23:53-23:56

I want you to Google some things, like this one, for example.

    23:56-24:02

Do you know right now, Facebook is working on creating the world's largest currency.

    24:02-24:03

    Did you know that?

    24:03-24:05

Google this, not right now by the way.

    24:05-24:09

If your neighbor is Googling this, knock their phone out of their hand, you have my permission.

    24:10-24:12

I said write it down, you can Google this later.

    24:12-24:23

But Facebook has, they've merged WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger, and currently it reaches somewhere between 2.7 and 2.9 billion people.

    24:24-24:37

And they are working on developing this digital coin that's pegged into the value of government currencies that will give you the ability to send payment to anyone in the world without having to do a money exchange.

    24:38-24:45

Meaning if I want to send money to somebody in Japan, we don't have to worry about yen and dollars. We have the common currency.

    24:46-24:50

Now do you see how this technology is a mechanism that's going to allow this?

    24:50-24:53

Do you see it? Again, it's going to be convenient. It's going to eliminate fraud.

    24:54-24:58

Maybe your transactions can be verified by facial recognition or fingerprint.

    24:58-25:01

As we've said, we're already there people.

    25:01-25:05

Meanwhile in China, do you know about China's social credit system?

    25:05-25:06

    Do you know about that?

    25:06-25:09

How many people have heard of the social credit system?

    25:09-25:09

    A few of you?

    25:10-25:15

If you haven't, I'm gonna give you the elementary version, elementary school version, and you can look this up through some reading.

    25:15-25:19

But this social credit system is sort of like a credit score.

    25:19-25:22

You know, in our culture, we have a credit score.

    25:22-25:28

And if your credit score is too low, you don't qualify for a loan, or purchasing a house, or whatever, whatever.

    25:28-25:35

Well, in China they have a social credit system, but it's based on behavioral criteria.

    25:35-25:37

    And it's captured through surveillance.

    25:38-25:39

    Cameras everywhere, right?

    25:39-25:45

Well, with this social credit system, negative activity lowers your social credit score.

    25:46-25:47

    It's behavioral criteria.

    25:47-25:49

And it can be whatever they want it to be.

    25:49-25:51

J walking, boom, your credit score lowers.

    25:52-25:57

Monitoring how much time you play video games, that can lower your social credit score.

    25:58-26:04

Who you hang out with online, if they have a low social credit score, that lowers your social credit score.

    26:04-26:07

And it can be whatever criteria the government decides to use.

    26:08-26:09

You're like, well, what happens with social credit score?

    26:10-26:18

Well, if your social credit score gets low enough, you can't buy a plane or a train ticket, you can't land certain jobs, and you can't shop at certain stores.

    26:19-26:25

Right now in China, last that I had read, there are 17 million people blacklisted because they have low social credit.

    26:26-26:27

    17 million people!

    26:28-26:28

    You're like, so what?

    26:29-26:33

There's a huge push right now to bring the social credit system to the United States.

    26:33-26:36

I knew it, Pastor Jeff needs a tinfoil hat.

    26:36-26:37

    Google it, Google it.

    26:37-26:46

And by the way, the websites that are going to come up aren't some weird fringe things, you know, like UncleSamsMusket.com or whatever.

    26:46-26:53

We're talking like CNN, entrepreneur, like these are mainstream news sites that are recording this.

    26:54-26:56

That Uncle Sam's thing, is that really a site?

    26:56-27:00

Like, all right, I got a lot of Googling to do, Pastor Jeff, right, you do.

    27:00-27:02

    So, what is 666?

    27:03-27:03

    What is that?

    27:04-27:06

You know, it's almost like John's giving us a puzzle, right?

    27:06-27:15

Like John's giving us this puzzle, okay, it's the number of a man, and it's 666, and you know, you have 60 seconds to figure it out, and, well, here's the common answer.

    27:16-27:20

You know, the English language, we have our own characters for numbers, right?

    27:20-27:25

But in a lot of languages like the Greek, in which this is written, the characters for numbers are also letters.

    27:26-27:30

So the common answer is, if you, I mean, we're familiar with this because of football, right?

    27:31-27:34

Super Bowl, you know, with the Roman numerals, right?

    27:34-27:36

And those letters mean numbers, right?

    27:36-27:43

So what you do is you take the letters and you find out their numerical equivalent and you add those up.

    27:44-27:47

If the Antichrist, you'll get 666. That's the common interpretation of that.

    27:48-27:51

The only danger with that is a lot of people fit that criteria, right?

    27:51-27:54

Like, I think LBJ was 666, right?

    27:54-27:56

And I don't think he was the Antichrist.

    27:56-28:03

But the Antichrist hasn't been revealed yet, so really, guessing is just speculation.

    28:03-28:05

But notice he says this calls for wisdom.

    28:05-28:14

And I believe that when these days come that are described in this passage, When these days come, the 666 is going to make sense to those with wisdom.

    28:14-28:18

So the signs are right in front of us, increasingly so.

    28:18-28:30

And there are so many more signs of world events, things that have happened, Church, within the past few weeks that are fulfilling things that the Bible has prophesied centuries ago.

    28:30-28:33

I just don't have time to cover them all today.

    28:33-28:36

You know, a message like this, a message like this could send us into a panic.

    28:37-28:42

So I'm going to close just for a minute by sort of talking us all off of the ledge, collectively.

    28:43-28:45

With a reminder, I want you to jot a couple things down.

    28:45-28:48

We're not going to panic because God is in control.

    28:48-28:50

    God is in control.

    28:50-28:54

So jot this down, first of all, letter A, God is in control, so I will not fear.

    28:55-28:56

    So I will not fear.

    28:56-29:01

I could say so much about that, but I spent a whole year, didn't we, going through the book of Acts.

    29:02-29:07

You don't need to leave here today and go, you know, lock yourself in the closet with the lights out.

    29:08-29:17

I just want to remind you that all of these things that we're talking about here, all of these things were already talked about in God's Word even before Revelation chapter 13.

    29:17-29:22

Isaiah, Daniel, Jesus talked about them in the Gospels, Paul, it's all been predicted.

    29:23-29:27

Okay, so we get to Revelation 13, it's not like this brand new information.

    29:27-29:50

John's just seeing a sign that's showing how all of these prophecies are sort of coming together. So we don't need to worry, we don't need to fear, we don't need to panic, because everything is going down exactly as God said it would. So instead of panic, Church, I would suggest to you that that should bring us comfort. I want you to look, you might want to circle these, draw a line on them, whatever. See if you can find the common phrase here.

    29:50-30:29

Verse 5, "Beast was given a mouth, uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed." to exercise authority. Okay, verse 7. "Also, it was allowed to make war on the saints." Okay, verse 14. "By the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast." Okay, jump down to verse 15. "And it was allowed." Okay, what's the common phrase you saw in all those verses? "It was allowed." Isn't that awesome? Like, what's awesome about that? Well, Who allowed it? Who? Satan? Yeah, Satan allowed the Antichrist to do these. No, no, no, no.

    30:29-30:33

I don't... Nah. It's obvious that Satan isn't the one granting permission here.

    30:33-30:36

Okay, I'm going to count to three and you're going to shout out who granted permission.

    30:36-30:44

You ready? One, two, three. God! God granted permission, right? Everything in this chapter.

    30:45-30:50

And John reminds us again, at least four times that I found here, God's allowing all of this.

    30:51-30:53

He's like, "Yeah, exactly how I laid it out.

    30:53-30:55

The church isn't going to be here for the worst of it.

    30:55-30:57

The evil days are here already.

    30:57-31:05

It's only going to get more and more dark." So when you see these signs, you can panic, or you can look at these signs and say, "Yep, God's in control.

    31:06-31:11

He's in control. He's doing it exactly as He said He would." So I will not fear, secondly, so I am secure.

    31:12-31:12

    I am secure.

    31:13-31:18

Again, if you are in Christ, if you are in Christ, you are written down in His book.

    31:18-31:33

So for those of you sitting here today that have received Christ as Lord and Savior, who have received His gift of salvation, His gift of eternal life, for you and for those who are going to come to Christ during the tribulation, you are secure. Nothing can take your salvation from you.

    31:33-31:38

And all we saw last week, the devil is powerful, but he isn't powerful enough to take your salvation.

    31:38-31:40

So I would encourage you, church, let the signs drive you.

    31:41-31:44

Get into His Word. Worship Him. Pray passionately.

    31:44-31:48

and let this drive you to share the good news with those who don't know it.

    31:48-31:48

    Let's pray.

    31:49-32:12

Father in heaven, we thank you, especially for the phrase over and over in your passage here today, "It is allowed." "It was allowed." Because God, once again, we can come to this passage and look at this and say, "Wow, everything is out of control." But here we see again and again and again, "You're sovereign." And everything that's happening is happening only because you permit it.

    32:13-32:19

Father, I pray that a passage like this and a message like this wouldn't drive us to fear, but I pray the opposite. I pray it would drive us to trust.

    32:20-32:28

I pray it would drive us to a thankfulness to You for Your salvation, but also at the same time an urgency, because we all know people that don't know You.

    32:28-32:32

And they're going to be forced with someday facing this decision.

    32:32-32:36

Am I going to receive the mark of the beast and be able to buy food, or am I going to go hungry?

    32:36-32:43

Father, reignite in us a passion to reach the lost, especially the loss that surrounds us in our homes and in our workplaces.

    32:44-32:47

Because the time is near, we know that Jesus Christ is coming soon.

    32:48-32:50

It's in His name that we pray, Amen.

  2. What do you think about the “mark of the beast”, and how buying and selling will be controlled? How do you think that will play out? Why do you think so many people will “buy in”?

  3. How do you understand the meaning of 666? Why do you think John presented it in such a mysterious way?
