Open up your Bibles with me, please, to John 3.

    01:13-01:19

The series we're going through this year is taking us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    01:20-01:26

And so far in the first three chapters, we've seen that Jesus Christ has made Himself known.

    01:26-01:30

That's the only way we know anything about Him, is He's made Himself known to us.

    01:30-01:39

And we've seen that He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and it's our job to make Him known to other people.

    01:40-01:43

In turning water into wine, Jesus made known His glory.

    01:44-01:48

And as Jesus cleared out the temple from the phonies, we saw His zeal.

    01:49-01:53

And last week in Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus, we talked about knowing His salvation.

    01:54-01:57

Today we're going to talk about knowing His worth.

    01:57-01:58

    Knowing His worth.

    01:58-02:26

By show of hands, how many people like me are active or, more accurately like me, semi-retired comic book nerds. Show of hands. Okay, a couple of you. Should have went with the other opener. All right, let's try this then. How many of you have seen one of those comic book movies? Raise your hands. Any of the Marvel movies? Unfortunately, if you saw a DC movie, raise your hand, get them up. Okay, today you are an honorary comic book nerd, so the introduction is relevant.

    02:27-02:37

This caught my attention, fellow comic book nerds, that several years ago there There was a lady that took a box of comics that she had found in an attic or somewhere.

    02:37-02:42

She took it to New Dimension Comics in Cranberry, just up the road, right on 19.

    02:43-02:44

And she didn't know what they were.

    02:44-02:46

It was just a box of comics.

    02:46-02:54

And she thought, "Well, maybe somebody might be interested in these." So she took them up there, and the guy was rifling through this box of comics.

    02:54-03:02

And in this old box of comics this woman found was a copy of All-American Comics #6.

    03:03-03:09

All right, comic book nerds, everybody go, "Wow, that was so unconvincing." So I'm going to catch you up to speed here.

    03:09-03:11

    Something that the nerds get.

    03:12-03:14

This is all American Comics 16 that was in there.

    03:14-03:22

There are estimated 10 to 20 of these in existence, and it is the first appearance of the Green Lantern.

    03:22-03:23

How many of you have heard of the Green Lantern?

    03:24-03:32

He's the guy with the ring, can do anything unless it's made out of wood or yellow or I don't remember all the rules.

    03:32-03:35

They're like, "Well, if he's got a ring, why is he called the Lantern?

    03:36-03:38

    It powers the ring, obviously.

    03:39-03:41

Anyways, that's not important." Here's what is important.

    03:42-03:46

They promptly put this comic on eBay for $75,000.

    03:47-03:51

See, this woman was carrying around this box of old comics.

    03:51-03:58

And I imagine at some point she probably thought about just pitching them, or burning them, or giving them to Goodwill, or whatever.

    03:59-04:04

I would have liked to have been there to see the look on her face when she found out what exactly it was that she had.

    04:04-04:10

You know, church, people so often fail to see the worth of Jesus Christ.

    04:10-04:13

And like this lady with this comic book, it's right there.

    04:14-04:14

    It's right there.

    04:15-04:17

But people just don't see it.

    04:18-04:20

They don't recognize Him for who He is.

    04:20-04:31

Today we're going to see how knowing Jesus' worth, or should I say recognizing Jesus' worth, with His infinite worth, it is going to absolutely change your life.

    04:32-04:36

You just have to recognize how much Jesus Christ is worth.

    04:36-04:38

John 3 - are you there?

    04:38-04:45

Verse 22 says, "After this, Jesus and His disciples went into the Judean countryside.

    04:46-04:57

And He remained there with them and was baptizing." John also was baptizing at Anon near Salim because water was plentiful there and people were coming and being baptized.

    04:58-05:01

For John had not yet been put into prison.

    05:02-05:08

That last verse, just a parenthetical note of chronology, John wasn't baptizing people in prison, obviously.

    05:08-05:13

This had happened before he went to prison, and that's another story.

    05:14-05:17

But the point here is this, John went north.

    05:18-05:20

So why is this Bible worthy?

    05:21-05:21

    Here's why.

    05:21-05:26

John was preaching and baptizing and getting thousands of people to come.

    05:26-05:28

    He was ultra successful.

    05:29-05:30

    So what did he do?

    05:30-05:32

He packed up and went somewhere else.

    05:32-05:34

Like why in the world would he do that?

    05:35-05:37

Why would he leave where he was successful?

    05:37-05:39

He did it to make room for Jesus.

    05:39-05:40

    That's why.

    05:40-05:41

    No competition.

    05:42-05:43

    Like, "No, Jesus is here.

    05:44-05:47

I'm going to move down the road." With that in mind, look at verse 25.

    05:47-05:53

It says, "Now a discussion arose between some of John's disciples and a Jew over purification.

    05:54-06:10

And they came to John and said to him, 'Rabbi, he who is with you across the Jordan to whom you bore witness, look, he is baptizing and all are going to him.'" Now stop right there.

    06:11-06:17

A discussion between John's disciples and a certain Jew over purification, probably talking about the act of baptism.

    06:18-06:19

That's not the important thing here.

    06:20-06:26

The important thing is what this conversation brought to light, and what it brought to light was jealousy.

    06:26-06:28

    You see that? Jealousy.

    06:28-06:47

They're like, "Well, that guy, John, that guy that you were talking about, that you were with earlier, Jesus, but they didn't say his name, that guy, he's baptizing, and everybody's going to him." And like, come on, John, like, okay, preaching and baptizing.

    06:47-06:49

Let's be honest, John, that's your thing, right?

    06:49-06:50

    That's your thing.

    06:51-06:53

John the Baptist, it's in your name.

    06:53-06:54

    That's your thing.

    06:55-07:00

So now this guy shows up and he's totally doing all the same things that you're doing.

    07:00-07:03

But for some reason, his crowds are getting bigger than yours.

    07:04-07:07

And I'm going to be honest with you, I kind of get where they're coming from here.

    07:08-07:10

Because you see, it wasn't anything against Jesus.

    07:10-07:12

They were just so loyal to John.

    07:12-07:14

they spent their lives following John.

    07:14-07:16

They were just loyal to him.

    07:17-07:19

And they didn't want to see him overshadowed.

    07:19-07:24

But what we're going to look at today is John's response to their jealousy.

    07:25-07:31

And it focuses, all of the rest that we're talking about today focuses on the surpassing worth of Jesus Christ.

    07:32-07:35

So on your outline, we're gonna talk today about knowing Jesus' worth.

    07:36-07:38

This will, again, change your life.

    07:39-07:40

    Knowing Jesus' worth.

    07:40-07:41

    Write this down, number one.

    07:42-07:44

Knowing Jesus' worth makes jealousy a non-issue.

    07:45-07:47

    It makes jealousy a non-issue.

    07:48-07:49

    So we're gonna start here.

    07:49-07:52

We're gonna talk about what prompted this discussion with John.

    07:52-07:55

Today for a few minutes, I'm gonna talk to you about jealousy.

    07:55-07:57

    Jealousy is a killer.

    07:58-08:08

You work so hard to succeed, and then someone else is doing the same thing that you're doing, but they're getting a much better response, and they're more popular.

    08:08-08:12

People are talking about them, and they're not talking about you as much.

    08:12-08:14

And you're like, "Hey, that's not fair.

    08:14-08:15

    I was here first.

    08:15-08:20

Why should he be getting all the attention?" Sometimes it happens in the workplace, right?

    08:20-08:22

Sometimes it happens in your neighborhood.

    08:23-08:28

We look at someone that we think is doing better than us and we begin to resent that person.

    08:29-08:41

Sadly, we need to talk about this because this is the context of the passage, but sadly this happens in ministry as much or maybe more than in other arenas of life.

    08:41-08:43

    This jealousy happens in ministry.

    08:43-08:44

Why is his church bigger than mine?

    08:45-08:46

Why is he making more money?

    08:46-08:48

Why is she more popular than me?

    08:48-08:49

    Jealousy is a killer.

    08:49-08:52

You remember, I think about this all the time.

    08:52-08:54

You remember Saul and David in the Old Testament?

    08:55-09:00

It was jealousy that literally drove Saul insane, murderously insane.

    09:00-09:06

You see, Saul was the king and David was this young up and coming guy that was anointed to be the next king.

    09:06-09:08

and he was getting really popular.

    09:09-09:23

In fact, 1 Samuel 18, verse seven, talks about this song that these women were singing, and I'm not gonna sing it because I don't know the tune, but these are the lyrics of the song that the women were singing.

    09:23-09:28

Saul has struck down his thousands and David his 10,000s.

    09:29-09:37

Everybody was singing, all these ladies were singing that song, like Saul kills a thousand, David kills 10,000, And it drove Saul insane.

    09:38-09:44

It was like everywhere he went, he gets in his chariot and turns on the radio, bam, that's the song that they're playing.

    09:44-09:52

And he goes into the store, K-Jeweler or wherever he shopped and guess what song is playing on the radio?

    09:52-09:53

    This song.

    09:53-09:57

He just, he kept hearing this song and oh, I can't stand that song.

    09:58-10:03

And it got to the point, you can read this, Saul ruined his life over this song.

    10:04-10:10

It drove him to jealousy to the point that he spent the rest of his life as the king trying to kill the next king.

    10:10-10:13

All of it fueled by jealousy.

    10:13-10:14

    It is a killer.

    10:15-10:18

And we're all susceptible to it, but I want you to see verse 27.

    10:19-10:22

Okay, so you have the context here back in John 3.

    10:22-10:30

They're like, "Hey, the guy that you were with, "you know, everybody's going to him, John." Look at verse 27, look at John's response because this is so profound.

    10:31-10:36

John answered, "A person cannot receive even one thing, unless it is given him from heaven.

    10:37-10:38

    That's John's response.

    10:38-10:38

    What?

    10:39-10:41

    It's something that John got.

    10:42-10:57

Everybody that's involved in any level of ministry should get, and this morning I'm speaking heavily to people that are involved in ministry, which honestly most of the people in this church are involved in some aspect of ministry, whether it's in this church or outside of this church, you're involved in some aspect of ministry.

    10:58-11:01

But here's something that everyone in ministry should get.

    11:01-11:07

A person cannot receive even one thing unless it is given him from heaven.

    11:08-11:13

In other words, to rephrase this another way, ministry is assigned by God.

    11:13-11:14

    Write that down.

    11:14-11:16

    Ministry is assigned by God.

    11:17-11:19

You're like, why have this little ministry that I'm involved in?

    11:19-11:23

If you do, if you're involved in a ministry, it's because God gave you the ministry.

    11:23-11:24

    That's where that came from.

    11:25-11:27

And we could spend a lot of time on this.

    11:27-11:30

I don't want to spend too much time, but it's important that we get this down.

    11:31-11:34

Colossians 1.25, look at what Paul writes.

    11:34-11:38

Paul says, "I became a minister." How? Look at the next phrase.

    11:38-11:45

"According to the stewardship from God that was given to me." Like, how'd you become a minister, Paul?

    11:45-11:46

How'd you become a missionary, Paul?

    11:46-11:49

He says, "It was from God.

    11:49-11:57

God assigned this to me." He says, "For you to make the word of God fully known." Ministry is assigned by God.

    11:58-12:02

God determines the scope of your ministry.

    12:02-12:05

If you're like, well, why isn't Harvest a mega church?

    12:05-12:07

Because that's not where God has us right now, that's why.

    12:08-12:11

Like, well, is that where God is going to have us eventually? I don't know.

    12:11-12:12

    That's up to Him.

    12:12-12:17

Like, why isn't our youth group as big as like, Northways Youth Group or some other church's youth?

    12:17-12:21

Why isn't our youth group as big as another church's youth group?

    12:21-12:24

Because this is the group that God has entrusted to us right now.

    12:24-12:33

Well, why does Beth Moore get to minister to thousands of ladies, and we minister to less than thousands of ladies, because this is the assignment that God has for us right now.

    12:34-12:35

Like, well, I'm in small group.

    12:35-12:40

Why is this small group so much bigger than my small group?

    12:40-12:44

Because God has entrusted a certain number of people that he wants you to pour into right now.

    12:45-12:45

    That's why.

    12:45-12:47

Like, wait a second, Pastor Jeff.

    12:47-12:52

What does all this have to do with knowing the majestic worth of Jesus Christ?

    12:53-12:53

    The answer is everything.

    12:54-13:01

Before you got involved in ministry, whatever ministry you're involved in, any level, weren't you motivated to serve Christ in the first place?

    13:02-13:05

Because you believe with your whole heart that He is worthy of your service.

    13:05-13:06

    Isn't that what motivated you?

    13:07-13:14

How many people would say, I've got involved in some level of ministry because I believe that Jesus Christ is worthy of my service.

    13:14-13:15

How many people would say that?

    13:15-13:25

That you start out and you say, even if I only ever bring one person to Christ, I'm going to be so thankful that He used me.

    13:25-13:26

    Well, what changed?

    13:27-13:36

What changes is we take a couple of laps around the block in our ministry and we start looking at what God's doing through other people, how God's using other people.

    13:37-13:40

And in our pride, we start to think, well, that's not fair.

    13:41-13:42

I mean, I should have a bigger ministry than that guy.

    13:42-13:45

I mean, I am a way better speaker than that guy.

    13:45-13:47

I am way more charismatic than that guy.

    13:47-13:49

I am way smarter than that girl.

    13:49-13:54

And we start, suddenly, suddenly, we are John's jealous disciples.

    13:55-14:02

And we too need reminded what John's disciples need reminded and that's this, you can't receive one thing unless it's been given to you from heaven.

    14:02-14:03

    That is from God.

    14:04-14:26

But you need to get back to the place and I need to remind myself, church, to get back to the place where I'm saying and you are saying, Jesus Christ is worthy of my service and He is worthy to determine how I serve and he is worthy to determine to how many I serve.

    14:27-14:28

    We're gonna get back there.

    14:28-14:34

So it drove John, "John, your crowds are getting smaller." I'm just doing God's assignment, man.

    14:34-14:34

    It's all him.

    14:35-14:37

I mean, Moses understood this, right?

    14:37-14:40

You don't have to turn there now, but just drop this down, Numbers chapter 11.

    14:41-14:42

They're kind of a funny story.

    14:43-14:53

But Numbers chapter 11, there were a couple of other Jews that were prophesying and Joshua goes to Moses, "Hey, hey, hey, there's other people that are preaching in the camp, Moses, you need to stop them because you're the preacher.

    14:54-14:55

Everybody knows you're the preacher around here.

    14:55-14:58

And we can't have other people preaching here, Moses, because that's your thing.

    14:58-15:00

So you tell them to shut up.

    15:00-15:02

    You remember Moses' response?

    15:02-15:12

Moses was like, "I wish everyone was a preacher." Moses says, "I wish everyone of God's people "were full of his spirit and were preaching.

    15:12-15:14

"That's what I wish." He got it.

    15:14-15:15

    He got it.

    15:16-15:17

    Because it's about God's glory.

    15:18-15:19

    It's about God's glory.

    15:19-15:26

And when you get that in your mind and get it back in your heart to say, hey, it's about God's glory, that kills jealousy.

    15:26-15:28

Of course I want the church to grow.

    15:28-15:35

Of course you want to impact as many people as possible in your ministry, but let me ask you a question.

    15:35-15:40

What if God's assignment for you is simply what you have before you right now?

    15:40-15:41

    What if that's it?

    15:41-15:49

What if the Lord said to you, this is who I have for you to minister to, it's not going to get any bigger, It's not going to get any different.

    15:49-15:52

These are the people that you're pouring yourself into.

    15:52-15:53

Would you be content with that?

    15:54-15:55

    Is he worth it?

    15:55-15:56

    Is he worth it?

    15:56-15:59

Or would you just walk away from your ministry and say, "No, no, no, no, no, uh-uh, uh-uh.

    16:00-16:07

I deserve more than what I'm getting because I'm worth more than what I'm getting." Well, here's the problem.

    16:07-16:12

Let's get our eyes off of our worth and put them on the worth of Jesus Christ.

    16:12-16:17

And if he says, "Hey, you're spending your whole life You're only ever going to affect this one person.

    16:17-16:19

Praise the Lord you affected eternity for that one person.

    16:20-16:23

Reality is he who's faithful with little is going to be entrusted with much.

    16:24-16:27

So let's get our eyes on the worth of Jesus.

    16:27-16:34

And like John the Baptist, you'll see even if your ministry seems to be shrinking, jealousy is not an issue for you.

    16:34-16:36

Like, oh, this is what God has for me to do.

    16:36-16:39

So I'm going to do it with excellence as for the King.

    16:40-16:44

Knowing Jesus' worth, number two, makes me understand who I am.

    16:45-16:46

Okay, so jealousy is a non-issue, right?

    16:46-16:47

    We're done with that, right?

    16:48-16:50

Jealousy is in the rear view mirror for us forever, right?

    16:51-16:51

    Great.

    16:52-16:56

Number two, knowing Jesus' word makes me understand who I am.

    16:56-16:58

Look at verses 28 through 30.

    16:59-16:59

    John continues.

    17:00-17:10

He said, "You yourselves bear me witness that I said, 'I am not the Christ, but I have been sent before Him.' The one who has the bride is the bridegroom.

    17:10-17:20

The friend of the bridegroom, that's the best man, the friend of the bridegroom who stands and hears him rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice.

    17:20-17:23

Therefore, this joy of mine is now complete.

    17:23-17:27

He must increase, but I must decrease.

    17:28-17:34

When you understand the worth of Jesus Christ, it will help you finally and fully realize who you are.

    17:35-17:37

John's illustration here is the best man.

    17:38-17:39

The best man at a wedding.

    17:39-17:41

Best man at a wedding. Boy, that role changed quite a bit.

    17:42-17:44

    Today, the best man's job...

    17:45-18:04

Today, the best man's job is to throw the bachelor party, stand there at the wedding. Sometimes he holds the rings, and of course the best man's big job is to give the speech at the reception. I've done a lot of weddings. I've heard a lot of touching, great, moving, emotional best man speeches.

    18:05-18:08

Something else? I see Erin smiling. She knows what I'm going to say.

    18:08-18:16

Aaron and I had the privilege and honor of hearing the all-time worst best man speech ever given at any wedding ever in the history of marriage.

    18:17-18:20

And that's not even up for debate. I'm going to paraphrase it for you.

    18:20-18:26

This guy, it seemed like he was speaking for like a half hour. I'm sure it wasn't that long.

    18:27-18:32

It was so bad. It just seemed like it was that long. But I'm going to paraphrase it for you.

    18:32-18:36

Okay, so this guy gets up and he has his glass.

    18:36-18:38

and he's wearing this smoker's jacket.

    18:39-18:41

Already that was a bad sign.

    18:41-18:45

It was like dollar store Hugh Hefner kind of thing happening there.

    18:45-18:46

    It was bad.

    18:47-18:54

So he gets up to do this speech, and the reception was at that castle, you know, where they play the golf.

    18:54-18:55

You know what I'm talking about?

    18:56-18:57

    Shakespeare's Castle.

    18:58-18:58

You guys know what I'm talking about?

    18:59-19:02

OK, so it was a packed place, and it was a really elegant setting.

    19:03-19:04

And the smoker's jacket gets up.

    19:04-19:08

And this is the paraphrase, the short version of what he said.

    19:09-19:21

He says, "You know, I was really thankful "to be asked to be the best man at your wedding, "because I remember you came all the way "and you were the best man at my wedding, "and I appreciated that.

    19:21-19:28

"Of course, my wedding didn't work out so well." Yeah, we kind of know how that turned out.

    19:28-19:32

She cheated on me, and our marriage is over.

    19:32-19:34

And I should have known, I should have seen that coming.

    19:35-19:40

And I hope that your marriage lasts longer than mine.

    19:41-19:43

And Aaron and I are sitting there like, "Get the hook!

    19:44-19:51

Somebody! Get that guy! Unplug his microphone! Something!" A little tip for you, just bonus.

    19:51-19:56

If you have to give one of those speeches at a wedding, make it about the people that get married.

    19:57-19:59

For heaven's sake, make it about them.

    20:00-20:00

    Because here's the thing.

    20:01-20:04

This guy made the whole thing about him.

    20:04-20:07

It was all about me and my horrible, no good, failed marriage.

    20:08-20:11

And boo-hoo me. He made the whole thing about him.

    20:12-20:14

And the best man knows it's not about him.

    20:15-20:17

That's exactly what John the Baptist is saying here.

    20:18-20:21

He goes, "It's not about me. What, you think I'm the groom?

    20:21-20:26

You think I'm the spotlight here?" He goes, "It's not about me. I'm just... you know what I am?

    20:26-20:28

I'm the best man at the wedding. That's what I am.

    20:28-20:29

Do you know what that means?

    20:29-20:30

    I'm a big fat nothing.

    20:31-20:32

Because it's all about the groom.

    20:33-20:36

In those days, the best man, his job, he did whatever the groom wanted.

    20:37-20:44

During the year of the betrothal, he communicated to the bride while the groom was preparing the place, keeping updates.

    20:44-20:46

And when the time came, did you know this?

    20:47-20:48

    This is important.

    20:48-20:52

The best man's job was to present the bride to the groom.

    20:53-20:53

    That was his job.

    20:54-20:57

It's time. The groom is here.

    20:57-20:59

And here is your bridegroom." That was his job.

    21:00-21:02

And John the Baptist is like, "That's me!

    21:02-21:10

That's me because the groom is here, Jesus Christ, and the bride." "That's the church. I'll get that later." And he's like, "Here you go, groom.

    21:10-21:19

Here is your bride, the church, sinners who need Jesus Christ." John says, "I'm not the groom.

    21:20-21:27

My job is to just connect the bride to the groom, to bring sinners to Jesus." He goes, "Guys, you're jealous. Let me tell you why.

    21:28-21:42

I am joyful because while you're going, all these people are going to Jesus." I'm like, "Yes, this is exactly what I live for, to see people go to Jesus Christ." The best man does his job, but he knows, he knows.

    21:43-21:44

    It's not the main event.

    21:44-21:53

If you're involved in any aspect of ministry, again, and I know a lot of you are in this church and outside, verse 30 has to be like the banner over your ministry.

    21:54-21:58

Jesus must increase, but I must decrease.

    21:58-22:08

Whether you're the pastor, whether you're the kids teacher, whether you're the small group leader, you have to decrease and allow Jesus Christ to increase.

    22:09-22:14

Because great ministry doesn't produce disciples of the ministry or disciples of the minister.

    22:14-22:17

A great ministry produces disciples of Jesus Christ.

    22:18-22:20

And failing at this is an easy progression.

    22:20-22:22

It's an easy progression to fail.

    22:22-22:23

I mean, you see God at work.

    22:24-22:26

    God's blessing people through you.

    22:27-22:28

And then people start complimenting you.

    22:29-22:31

And then you start to become proud of your work.

    22:31-22:33

You start to think, you know what?

    22:33-22:35

God is pretty lucky to have me on his team.

    22:36-22:38

I am doing a great job saving people.

    22:39-22:41

You start to think it is your work.

    22:41-22:46

And when you start to think it is your work, you become focused on making sure that you are increasing.

    22:47-23:20

I'm gonna get my name out, my branding, my blah blah blah marketing buzzword whatever I get to increase myself and when you do that Jesus begins decreasing not in person or character obviously just in the scope of your ministry it's more about you than it is about him and if there's ever anybody in the history of the world who might might have had some tiny bit of validation to think this way it would be John the Baptist Because Jesus said, "He's the greatest man who ever lived." Can you imagine if Jesus said that about you?

    23:21-23:32

Jesus said, "He's the greatest man who ever lived." And more than anyone, John could have thought, "Hey, you know what Jesus said about me? I am pretty awesome." You see, he knew the worth of Jesus, and that made John.

    23:33-23:38

And that makes us, when we really grasp the worth of Jesus Christ, it makes us understand who we are.

    23:39-23:41

We're just the best man at the wedding.

    23:41-23:45

We're like, "Hey, the groom, Jesus Christ, He's the one you have to go to.

    23:46-23:47

    Let's magnify him and us.

    23:47-23:53

We're just simply content to fade into the background because it's not about us.

    23:53-23:54

    It's not about us.

    23:55-23:57

Knowing Jesus' worth makes me understand who I am.

    23:58-24:06

Thirdly, knowing Jesus' worth makes me, excuse me, believing in Jesus, makes believing in Jesus the only appropriate response.

    24:06-24:08

We're gonna go through this last part quickly.

    24:09-24:17

John was so sold out on following Jesus, on believing Jesus, he was so sold out because he recognized Jesus' worth.

    24:17-24:18

    Can you say that?

    24:19-24:20

Yeah, I see how awesome Jesus is.

    24:20-24:21

That's why I'm so committed to Jesus.

    24:22-24:35

The only way you're going to follow Jesus from your heart and from your will is when you truly get a glimpse for the awesomeness of Jesus Christ and see his worth.

    24:35-24:41

And with the rest of John's speech here, he gives us three reasons Jesus has ultimate worth.

    24:41-24:42

Like, "John, you're awfully serious about Jesus.

    24:42-24:47

Why is that?" He gives us three reasons that we would do well to embrace.

    24:48-24:50

Three reasons Jesus has ultimate worth.

    24:50-24:52

Letter A, Jesus has ultimate perspective.

    24:53-24:54

    Look at verse 31.

    24:54-24:59

John continues, "Okay, we saw he must increase, but I must decrease." Now John is launching into this.

    24:59-25:00

Here's why I think Jesus is awesome.

    25:00-25:01

    Look at this.

    25:01-25:04

It says, "He who comes from above is above all.

    25:06-25:09

He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks in an earthly way.

    25:09-25:13

He who comes from heaven is above all.

    25:13-25:18

He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, yet no one receives his testimony.

    25:19-25:21

    Jesus has ultimate perspective.

    25:22-25:25

We can only speak from earthly point of view.

    25:26-25:31

And that's something every single person that's ever lived on this earth has in common.

    25:31-25:34

That's something every single person in this church right now has in common.

    25:35-25:37

We can only speak from an earthly point of view.

    25:38-25:39

    That's it.

    25:40-25:43

But this is one more thing that makes Jesus exclusively unique.

    25:44-25:47

That John points out, Jesus came from heaven.

    25:48-25:53

And Jesus' point of view spans everywhere and all time, past, present, and future.

    25:53-25:59

Jesus has this perspective on things that he and he alone has.

    25:59-26:10

So when Jesus taught about God and heaven and Satan and eternity, Jesus wasn't quoting someone else And he wasn't guessing and he wasn't making it up.

    26:10-26:12

Jesus was simply speaking what he saw firsthand.

    26:13-26:17

Like yeah, I saw this stuff go down and let me tell you what it's like, right?

    26:18-26:21

Do you know what I think heaven is like?

    26:21-26:23

You know what I think, do you know what I think heaven's like?

    26:24-26:25

It doesn't matter what I think heaven is like.

    26:26-26:26

    That's your answer.

    26:27-26:27

I hear that all the time.

    26:27-26:28

You know what I think heaven's like?

    26:29-26:30

Do you know what I think heaven is like?

    26:30-26:30

    It doesn't matter.

    26:31-26:32

It doesn't matter what I think.

    26:32-26:33

It doesn't matter what you think.

    26:33-26:37

What matters is, what did Jesus say heaven's like?

    26:37-26:39

    Because that's where he's from.

    26:39-26:41

He simply spoke of what he saw firsthand.

    26:42-26:47

I don't know what heaven's like, but I know one person who's been there, and he came to earth and he told us about it.

    26:47-26:51

And that's one reason that Jesus has ultimate worth, is because he has ultimate perspective.

    26:51-26:53

    Nobody else like Jesus, nobody.

    26:53-26:55

Nobody's ever walked this earth like Jesus.

    26:55-26:57

    Secondly, Jesus has ultimate truth.

    26:57-26:59

Look at verses 33 and 34.

    27:00-27:04

Whoever receives his testimony sets his seal to this, that God is true.

    27:04-27:08

For he whom God has sent, utters the words of God.

    27:09-27:19

For he gives the Spirit without measure." Receiving Jesus Christ, receiving his words, John the Baptist says here, receiving his words is making your stand.

    27:20-27:21

You're setting your seal to this.

    27:21-27:26

You are declaring that I believe that God is true.

    27:26-27:29

Because when Jesus speaks, it's literally the word of God.

    27:30-27:33

Because, he says, Jesus has the Spirit without measure.

    27:33-27:35

That's what the end of verse 34 means.

    27:35-27:38

God the Father gave God the Son, Jesus Christ.

    27:38-27:42

He contained, he had, he possessed the Holy Spirit without measure.

    27:42-27:43

    There was no limit.

    27:44-27:45

    What does that mean?

    27:45-27:54

It means Jesus Christ, 100% full of the Holy Spirit, empowered by the Holy Spirit, 100% of the time.

    27:54-27:57

Every word from his mouth, the word of God himself.

    27:58-28:01

And no one else who ever lived can say that.

    28:01-28:04

As New Testament believers, are we full of God's Holy Spirit?

    28:04-28:05

    Absolutely yes.

    28:05-28:09

Is every moment of your life driven, dictated, and empowered by the Holy Spirit?

    28:10-28:10

    No.

    28:11-28:17

There's times that we sin, we make wrong, stupid, foolish, not Spirit-filled choices.

    28:17-28:18

    We're all there.

    28:18-28:19

    We all... not Jesus.

    28:20-28:21

    That's what makes Him unique.

    28:21-28:22

    Totally full of the Spirit.

    28:23-28:23

    Ultimate truth.

    28:24-28:27

And finally for today, Jesus has ultimate authority.

    28:27-28:28

    Look at verse 35.

    28:29-28:35

It says, "The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand." The Father has given all things into the hand of Jesus.

    28:36-28:37

Sounds like the Great Commission, right?

    28:37-28:50

Before Jesus gave the commission, He said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." John here is pointing out, do you notice that he says, "The Father loves the Son." You understand that this is a whole other sermon series for another time.

    28:50-29:01

But all of this, all of creation, the church, the bride of Christ, all of this, is God the Father's gift to God the Son, because of how much He loves Him.

    29:02-29:06

All of this, God the Father is saying, "This is yours, everything in creation.

    29:06-29:19

Jesus, you have authority over all of it." And this authority that Jesus has makes Him the difference maker when it comes to eternity, because verse 36 says, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

    29:19-29:29

Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." As a callback to the previous passage, this verse really sums up all of John chapter 3.

    29:30-29:32

I just want you to note one thing here though.

    29:32-29:37

You notice he says, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

    29:38-29:42

Whoever," I was expecting it to say, "Whoever does not believe," but that's not what it says.

    29:43-29:44

It says, "Whoever does not," what?

    29:44-29:45

    What does your Bible say?

    29:46-29:49

Obey, not believe, believe, and not even obey.

    29:50-29:57

You notice in the parallels here, He's saying that believing is not a suggestion.

    29:57-30:02

Believing is a command to be obeyed or not obeyed.

    30:02-30:14

In other words, you either believe in Jesus Christ and receive eternal life, or you don't obey the command to believe and the wrath of God remains on you.

    30:14-30:19

And I gotta tell you, that sure makes it look a little different than it's often presented.

    30:20-30:22

Like, can I please make a suggestion to you?

    30:22-30:31

I would like you to strongly consider making Jesus Christ, allowing Jesus Christ to, you know, he's knock, knock, knocking on the door of your life or whatever.

    30:32-30:34

That's not how the Bible presents the gospel.

    30:34-30:35

    It is a command.

    30:35-30:36

    I am commanding you.

    30:37-30:41

You must obey the gospel of Jesus Christ by believing in his name.

    30:41-30:42

    That's the gospel.

    30:42-30:49

You must believe in him because apart from him, the wrath of God is on you.

    30:49-30:52

But when you believe, when you say, "Yes, God, you're right.

    30:53-30:56

I'm turning from my sin and I am obeying you.

    30:56-30:59

I am believing in Jesus Christ." You have the gift of eternal life.

    31:00-31:03

Where in the world do you get off saying these things?

    31:03-31:04

    Well, Jesus has ultimate authority.

    31:05-31:06

    That's where this comes from.

    31:06-31:07

    It's not my opinion.

    31:07-31:09

It's the word of the one who has all authority.

    31:10-31:11

So do you see the worth of Jesus Christ?

    31:12-31:14

Do you see his incomparable majesty?

    31:14-31:23

And if you do, you'll recognize how foolish it would be to care more about people knowing you than people knowing Him.

    31:23-31:28

Because if you meet me and you forget about me, you haven't lost much.

    31:29-31:33

But if you meet Jesus and you forget about Him, you've lost everything.

    31:33-31:48

So in light of everything Jesus is, in light of everything Jesus can do, in light of the glorious gospel that He commands us to believe, whatever aspect of ministry you find yourself, Make this your motto.

    31:48-31:50

    Jesus Christ must increase.

    31:50-31:52

    And I, I must decrease.

    31:52-31:53

    Pray with me, please.

    31:54-31:59

Father in heaven, you know in our pride, we so badly want it to be about us.

    31:59-32:01

We want our name on the marquee.

    32:01-32:03

We want people talking about us.

    32:03-32:05

    We want people praising us.

    32:05-32:07

    We want people complimenting us.

    32:07-32:10

We want people thinking so much of us.

    32:10-32:13

    I pray, Father, for repentance.

    32:13-32:22

You would grant us repentance, Father, when we become jealous, When we become John's disciples, like John, Father, I pray that we would see ourselves for how we really are.

    32:22-32:23

    We're just the best, man.

    32:24-32:25

We're just pointing people to Jesus.

    32:26-32:32

People walk away from us knowing much about Jesus and knowing nothing about us, and we've succeeded.

    32:33-32:37

Father, grant us the humility that you require to serve you.

    32:37-32:42

Give us, Father, a glimpse, just a glimpse of the incomparable worth of Jesus Christ.

    32:43-32:45

    May he increase, Father.

    32:45-32:52

Please, Father, let Him increase. Let us decrease. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Open up your Bibles with me please to John chapter 3.

    01:17-01:20

Now show of hands, how many of you have ever been on an airplane?

    01:20-01:21

How many of you have been on an airplane?

    01:22-01:24

Oh great, then you know what I'm going to talk about.

    01:24-01:30

There's a phenomenon that happens on the front end of a flight that just absolutely baffles me.

    01:31-01:35

And that is the safety speech.

    01:36-01:37

You guys know what I'm talking about?

    01:38-01:39

Does it baffle you like it baffles me?

    01:41-01:43

I can tell looking in your eyes you're not baffled.

    01:43-01:46

I'm going to tell you something now, and it's going to baffle you now every time you get on an airplane.

    01:46-01:48

    Here's what baffles me.

    01:50-01:53

They are giving a life and death message in that moment.

    01:53-01:54

    True or false?

    01:55-01:58

True. And what are the people doing during that life and death message?

    01:59-02:05

Sleeping, getting ready for their nap, looking through SkyMall, playing on their phone, getting their computer out.

    02:06-02:09

And I'm just like, "People, do you hear what they're saying?

    02:10-02:40

In the case our airplane has to crash land in the ocean, here is how we're going to be saved." And everybody's like, "Meh, don't care." And then the other thing that's interesting to me is you have the people up front like half-heartedly going through the motions of walking people through how to be saved in this life and death situation.

    02:41-03:00

You know, they're like, "Oxygen mask drops down," and, you know, "Get the pamphlet with the pictures on it," and "Your seats have rotation device," and "Here's the exit." And they're just like, you know what I'm talking about, they're just like so bored and disinterested.

    03:02-03:04

I was thinking about that this week. You know what that's like?

    03:06-03:07

    That's like church.

    03:09-03:10

That's like a lot of churches.

    03:10-03:21

You have somebody up front who really doesn't care, sort of going through the motions, and then you have a bunch of people hearing this life and death message, and they don't really care either.

    03:23-03:29

We're fidgeting, we're thinking about what's for lunch, we're playing on our phones, whatever.

    03:31-03:32

    But here's the crazy thing.

    03:32-03:42

You know, there's a very, very tiny percentage of airplanes that actually require the whole usage of the speech, right?

    03:42-03:46

That's a very, very, very tiny percentage that actually has one of those types of emergencies.

    03:47-03:54

But you know, do you know what the percentage is for people that are going to die and face God someday?

    03:54-03:55

Do you know what that percentage is?

    03:56-03:58

    That's a hundred percent, right?

    03:59-04:03

You might want to fact check me on that. But that is a 100% death rate.

    04:04-04:06

So this is your reminder, church.

    04:08-04:13

Your plane's gone down individually. You're going to die someday.

    04:13-04:20

And Jesus tells us in this passage directly how to have eternal life.

    04:20-04:25

Jesus tells us directly in this passage how you can be condemned for eternity.

    04:27-04:33

And I just want to encourage you, with everything that's in you, pay attention.

    04:36-04:43

This is one of the most famous conversations in history that we're looking at today.

    04:44-04:50

And this passage we're looking at today contains the most famous verse in the Bible.

    04:52-05:05

And it covers the most important subject to man, which is, "How does salvation happen?" But, this is one of the most misunderstood passages in the Bible.

    05:06-05:08

So we're going to go through it together. We're going to look at a big chunk today.

    05:09-05:10

We're going to get through it together.

    05:11-05:18

The truth is, I could preach dozens and dozens and dozens of sermons to mine out all of the truth that we see here.

    05:18-05:23

And the reason I'm not doing that is because I don't want us to miss the flow of the conversation.

    05:24-05:26

See, sometimes I think we miss the big picture.

    05:27-05:33

We miss the forest because we're so busy looking at the little pieces of bark on each individual tree.

    05:33-05:38

I want us to see the big picture here because I believe it's important.

    05:39-05:48

And on your outline today, if you're taking notes, which I always encourage you to do, three things you need to know about how salvation works, right?

    05:54-05:57

Three things you need to know about how salvation works.

    05:59-06:00

The first, we'll jot this down.

    06:03-06:08

Number one, salvation is solely a work of the Holy Spirit.

    06:11-06:14

Salvation is solely a work of the Holy Spirit.

    06:15-06:22

chapter 3, it says, "Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

    06:23-06:47

This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, 'Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.' Jesus answered him, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.'" Look right there. Do you notice something weird there?

    06:49-06:51

This is a very familiar passage, so we've got to slow down a little bit.

    06:51-06:53

But did you notice something weird?

    06:54-06:59

Did you notice that Jesus was answering a question that Nicodemus didn't ask?

    06:59-07:00

    Did you notice that?

    07:01-07:04

I think in our minds, we think the story is like this.

    07:04-07:07

Nicodemus goes up to Jesus like, "Hey, tell me how to get saved.

    07:07-07:09

Would you please tell me about how to be born again?" or whatever.

    07:10-07:12

And that's not what the passage says at all.

    07:14-07:18

Nicodemus goes up, he goes, "Hey, we know you've got to be from God, right?

    07:18-07:27

We've been kind of watching you, and nobody can do the things that you do unless you're from God." And then Jesus launches into this whole other subject.

    07:27-07:37

You're like, "Why in the world did he do that? Why in the world did he do that?" Well, look at the very last verse of chapter 2. This is where we stopped last week.

    07:37-07:44

Remember, it says, "Jesus, he himself knew what was in man." I think Jesus knew exactly what Nicodemus wanted.

    07:45-07:52

Even though Nicodemus didn't ask the question, I think Jesus knew why he came to him.

    07:53-07:54

Like, look, we're not gonna beat around the bush here, okay?

    07:54-08:03

We're not gonna spend two hours with the, "How do you do? What's your favorite food, favorite color?" Until you get to the point of the real question you're gonna ask me, Jesus says, "I know what you're after here.

    08:04-08:06

You wanna know about eternal life.

    08:06-08:21

I'm gonna tell you something right now, right off the bat." He says, "Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Verse 4, "Nicodemus said to Him, 'How can a man be born when he is old?

    08:22-08:42

Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?' Jesus answered, 'Truly, truly I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." Stop there for a second.

    08:44-08:47

I don't think Nicodemus was being sarcastic here.

    08:47-08:51

I don't think he was mocking Jesus with his "Oh, what do you expect me to do?

    08:51-08:57

Climb back up in my mother's womb?" I don't think he was making fun or mocking at all.

    08:57-09:06

I think based on how he approached Jesus, "Rabbi, we know you're from God." I think Nicodemus was being very respectful.

    09:08-09:11

And I think he was simply following Jesus' line of discussion.

    09:11-09:15

Jesus said, "Okay, unless a person is born again, okay, let's talk about that, Jesus.

    09:15-09:17

    How does that happen?

    09:17-09:19

What do you mean by that?

    09:20-09:25

Because here's what I'm hearing." I think he was just following Jesus' line of discussion.

    09:26-09:40

Well, Jesus said, again, to clarify, He said, verse 5, "Unless one is born of water and the Spirit." Like, what does that mean?

    09:42-09:43

Well, it depends who you ask.

    09:44-09:47

Because there are so many different interpretations for what that means.

    09:47-09:51

Some people think it means physical birth and spiritual birth.

    09:51-09:54

The water refers to a woman's water breaking when a child is born.

    09:54-09:57

    And there's all kinds of...

    09:57-10:03

I'm going to tell you what I believe this is a reference to and where that comes from.

    10:04-10:06

    Jot down Ezekiel 36.

    10:06-10:09

    Ezekiel 36, verses 25-26.

    10:10-10:12

Just jot that reference down. You can look that up later.

    10:13-10:18

But in that passage, the Lord is talking about the new covenant.

    10:18-10:23

And the new covenant is all about a new creation.

    10:25-10:27

In that passage, it talks about the water and the Spirit.

    10:29-10:41

And he's saying that the day's coming with the new covenant that there will be true cleansing from sin, and it will be God putting His Spirit within you.

    10:41-10:43

I believe that's what he is referring to here.

    10:44-10:47

Because Nicodemus knew the Scriptures. He knew them.

    10:48-10:54

And I think Jesus, in saying this, Nicodemus would have known exactly, Oh, you're talking about that water and spirit passage.

    10:55-10:58

I know that passage. Ezekiel talked about that.

    11:00-11:16

Verse 6, Jesus says, "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." In other words, all that flesh can produce is more flesh.

    11:18-11:21

    Flesh cannot produce the Spirit.

    11:21-11:34

And here, Jesus is teaching that just as you were born physically, you must be born again spiritually.

    11:35-11:35

    Alright?

    11:37-11:39

So here's the mystery in all of this.

    11:42-11:48

You had no part of being born physically.

    11:49-11:56

They're like, "Well, yeah, I did, man. I was there. I was totally there." You didn't have any say in that.

    11:57-11:58

Did you pick where you were born?

    12:00-12:02

How many people here, show of hands, picked where you were born?

    12:04-12:06

You had no say over that. How about when you were born?

    12:07-12:11

You're like, "I wanted to be part of the greatest generation." Who here picked when they were born?

    12:14-12:19

You had no say over that. You have no say over where or when or...

    12:20-12:23

You had no part of being born physically.

    12:24-12:46

That's why I kind of laugh when you hear little kids say, "I wish I was never born!" Did you ever hear little kids say that? "I wish I was never born!" I think that's such a dumb statement. My response is, "Well, you were. So here we are." It's a dumb statement. "I wish I was never born!" Okay. Verse 7.

    12:47-13:00

Look at this. Jesus says, "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.'" Notice Jesus said, "Do not marvel." Jesus knew everything.

    13:01-13:04

And He knew that what He just said totally rocked Nicodemus.

    13:04-13:06

He was like, I mean, He got it. He got it.

    13:06-13:15

He's like, "What are you saying?" Stop for a second. "What are you saying?" And Jesus said, "Hey, hey, don't be surprised.

    13:17-13:18

Don't be surprised at what I'm telling you.

    13:18-13:23

Listen, you must be born again." Now listen, church, because you're about to get rocked.

    13:25-13:30

When Jesus says you must be born again, He is not giving a command.

    13:34-13:39

Jesus, in this passage, I want you to stay with me here, you're going to see this.

    13:39-13:45

Jesus was not teaching a "how to" in this passage.

    13:47-13:55

I think a lot of people assume that when you go to John 3, "Oh, that's where Jesus teaches you how to be born again." That is not. Jesus never taught how to be born again.

    13:56-14:04

He just simply said, "You must be born again." The analogy here is birth.

    14:04-14:07

Remember, we already established, you didn't participate in your physical birth.

    14:08-14:10

You know there's no books on how to be born, right?

    14:12-14:14

You can Google that, you can go to your local bookstore.

    14:14-14:16

There's no books on how to be born.

    14:16-14:19

You're like, oh yeah, there is, like what to expect when you're expecting.

    14:19-14:22

No, no, those are books for moms about to give birth.

    14:23-14:26

There's no books on how to be born.

    14:28-14:41

You know, there's no books in the maternity section or whatever that says, you know, if you want to, you know, easiest exit from the womb by, There's no books on telling you how to be born.

    14:44-14:47

    It's a condition. It's a condition.

    14:48-14:51

    Not a command. It's a condition.

    14:53-15:04

It's sort of like if you said to me, "How do I become an American citizen?" And I said, "Well, you must be born to an American." I know there's other ways, but this is an illustration, all right?

    15:05-15:06

    Run with me on this.

    15:06-15:07

How do I become an American citizen?

    15:07-15:16

I say, "You must be born to an American." I'm not commanding you to go be born to an American, because you've already been born.

    15:19-15:24

In the same way, you ask, "How do I become a citizen of God's kingdom?" It's a condition.

    15:24-15:29

Jesus said, "Here's how. You have to be born again." That's how it happens.

    15:30-15:31

    It happens to born-again people.

    15:32-15:37

It happens to people who find themselves in the condition in which they are born again.

    15:40-15:47

Now to drive the point home that salvation is solely a work of the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives another analogy.

    15:48-15:56

Because right now I know there's some people here that are like, "I don't know if I'm buying all this, Pastor Jeff, but look at verse 8." Jesus doubles down on this.

    15:56-16:03

Jesus said, "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.

    16:04-16:11

So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." Jesus said the Holy Spirit is like the wind.

    16:13-16:14

How do you control the wind?

    16:16-16:17

You can't do it, can you?

    16:18-16:20

    You can't increase the wind.

    16:22-16:23

    You can't decrease the wind.

    16:25-16:32

You can't call it like a dog when you want it, "Come on, wind, come on, come on, come on, we need a little wind here." You can't do it. It will not come.

    16:34-16:37

You can't send it away when you don't want it.

    16:38-16:44

You see, there's something about wind is it's everywhere, but you can't see it.

    16:44-16:46

"But I see wind all the time." No, you don't.

    16:47-16:50

You don't see wind, you see the effects of wind, right?

    16:51-16:54

Like at our house, I don't see the wind, I see the effects of wind.

    16:54-16:57

And do you know what the effects of wind are at our house?

    16:58-17:06

It's all the stuff in our yard being blown into the neighbor's yard, including, which absolutely baffles my mind, our trampoline.

    17:06-17:08

Does that happen to anybody else?

    17:09-17:09

    Anybody else?

    17:10-17:12

    Just us. Awesome.

    17:15-17:16

I don't know if Stroops are here.

    17:17-17:17

    Is Ryan here?

    17:18-17:19

    Oh, Ryan's not here.

    17:19-17:27

Last time, you remember, Sarah, last time I had to call Ryan, It blew like a quarter of a mile away into the neighbor's yard.

    17:27-17:28

I'm like, I have to call somebody to help me carry this.

    17:28-17:30

This thing weighs like 300 pounds.

    17:31-17:34

I had to call Ryan Strip to help me carry this thing out of the neighbor's yard.

    17:36-17:37

So the point is it's powerful.

    17:40-17:42

And it's everywhere, but you can't see it.

    17:42-17:43

You only see the effects of it.

    17:43-17:45

And Jesus said, that's the mystery of the Holy Spirit.

    17:46-17:47

    We can't see him.

    17:49-17:54

But we see the powerful life-changing effects of Him moving.

    17:55-18:03

So Jesus makes it clear to Nicodemus - hang in here because we're not done yet - Jesus makes it clear to Nicodemus that salvation is solely a work of the Holy Spirit.

    18:03-18:04

    Did you see that?

    18:05-18:08

Entering the kingdom of heaven happens to people who are born again.

    18:09-18:11

    Oh, you're marveled by that?

    18:11-18:13

Well, let me tell you something, the Holy Spirit's like the wind.

    18:16-18:17

    Number two, jot this down.

    18:18-18:20

Salvation is only understood correctly as Jesus describes it.

    18:21-18:25

Salvation is only understood correctly as Jesus describes it.

    18:25-18:26

    Look at verse 9.

    18:27-18:37

Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?" Now Nicodemus was no slouch, okay?

    18:38-18:42

This guy was probably way smarter than anybody in this room.

    18:43-18:44

Like, well, how do you know that?

    18:44-18:48

Well, verse 1 tells us that he was a ruler of the Jews.

    18:50-18:58

And we're going to see here in a second in verse 10, Jesus calls him "the teacher of Israel." This guy was no slouch.

    19:00-19:03

But oftentimes, we are so quick to condemn him.

    19:04-19:06

Like, "Oh Nicodemus, you're so dumb.

    19:06-19:10

I can't believe you didn't understand this." Listen, he knew way more than us.

    19:11-19:13

He knew way more than us.

    19:14-19:28

And that's why Nicodemus, more than any of us, understood the impact and profound nature of Jesus' words, and Nicodemus just could not wrap his brain around what Jesus was saying.

    19:32-19:34

Which is why he said what he said.

    19:35-19:37

    How can these things be?

    19:39-19:40

Why was it so hard for Nicodemus?

    19:43-19:46

As we said already, as we saw in the text, Nicodemus was a Pharisee.

    19:48-19:55

And as a Pharisee, Nicodemus would have spent his whole life trying to earn his way into the kingdom, right?

    19:55-19:56

Like a lot of people do.

    19:57-20:04

You think, "Well, good people go to heaven, bad people go to hell, so I do good and I earn my way into heaven." That was Nicodemus' mindset, right?

    20:04-20:08

    It's rituals, it's religion, it's works, it's morality.

    20:08-21:12

Jesus shows up and he's like, "Hey, hey, it is about none of that." What? I've lived my whole life this way, man. You're telling me I've wasted the last 30, 40 years of my life? You mean the way to God is not tied into my works or my religion? I mean, don't I have to do something or be something in order to get saved. How can salvation only be the work of God? I mean, I have to have some part of this. So Nicodemus says, "How can these things be?" Look at Jesus' reply in verse 10. "Jesus answered him, 'Are you the teacher of Israel? And yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do "If I have told you of earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

    21:13-21:22

No one has ascended into heaven except He who descended from heaven, the Son of Man and..." Stop right there.

    21:23-21:31

Jesus says to Nicodemus, "You should know this stuff." Nicodemus, you've taught the Scriptures.

    21:33-21:38

How did you miss this fundamental truth about what God said about the new covenant?

    21:41-21:44

And Jesus, we already established, He knows, right? He knows. He just knows.

    21:44-21:51

And I think right here Jesus knows Nicodemus' next question, which is going to be, "Jesus, where did you get all this information?

    21:51-21:56

Jesus, how do you know all this stuff?" That's why Jesus in verse 13, did you see that?

    21:56-22:04

He said, "No one's ascended into heaven except you, descended from heaven, the Son of Man." Like, where'd you get this information of heavenly things, Jesus?

    22:04-22:08

Jesus was like, "I got it from my house." Heaven!

    22:09-22:15

Here Jesus was revealing His deity, His authority and knowledge of God.

    22:17-22:20

And Jesus was telling Nicodemus, and He's telling us, "Church, listen.

    22:22-22:25

It doesn't matter what you think about salvation.

    22:27-22:31

It doesn't matter what you think." And I say that with all the love and respect I can muster.

    22:31-22:36

It doesn't matter what you've been taught about salvation.

    22:37-22:44

"Well, Pastor Jeff, I went to this church growing up and they taught something completely different." And it doesn't matter.

    22:45-22:46

It doesn't matter what you were taught.

    22:49-22:53

Because you're hearing this from the mouth of God.

    22:55-23:01

And I think we read this passage and we really try to understand exactly what it is that Jesus said.

    23:01-23:06

Not what we think he said, not what we were taught he said, but we're seeing what Jesus actually said.

    23:06-23:08

And I think a lot of us stand like Nicodemus.

    23:08-23:09

We're like, well, how can this be?

    23:11-23:18

How can salvation be apart from my works, my efforts, my church attendance, my whatever?

    23:21-23:23

I mean, I have to have some part of it, right?

    23:25-23:27

    Look at verse 14.

    23:28-23:45

Jesus said, "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life." What's this thing about Moses lifting up the serpent?

    23:45-23:46

    Do you remember that story?

    23:47-23:48

    It's in Numbers 21.

    23:49-23:56

Israel was complaining, again, as they always were, about everything as God was leading them out of Egypt.

    23:56-23:59

And Israel's complaining and God's sick of their complaining.

    23:59-24:04

He sent these fiery serpents and they were biting the Israelites and many of them died.

    24:05-24:10

So God told Moses as a solution, he was to make a bronze serpent and he was to put it on a pole.

    24:10-24:17

And when somebody was bit by one of these snakes, if they looked to this serpent on the pole, they would be saved.

    24:20-24:26

And Jesus is showing with this account, listen to this, this is so important.

    24:27-24:31

This account illustrates a key truth about how God brings about salvation.

    24:32-24:32

    You ready for this?

    24:32-24:33

    Here it is.

    24:35-24:38

    God does the work.

    24:39-24:45

And he commands us, look to what I am lifting up before you.

    24:49-25:07

In other words, the Lord is saying, "I bring about salvation, you must believe and look to what I provided as the means." And this is obviously the perfect illustration of the cross, because Jesus Christ is God's provision for salvation.

    25:08-25:16

And he was lifted up on the cross and you have to look to him as God's means to have eternal life.

    25:16-25:32

And this illustration that Jesus uses here bridge. If, or since, salvation is a work of God, the question is, "Okay, well what is man's part?" If salvation is God's work, then what's man's part?

    25:34-25:45

Here it is, man's part is what it always has been, clear back even in the days of Moses, Jesus was illustrating, man's part is look to God's provision and believe.

    25:47-25:48

    That's your part.

    25:49-25:52

Look to God's provision and believe.

    25:52-25:58

And that's why number three on your outline, here it is, your part of salvation, is believe.

    26:00-26:01

    Look at verse 16.

    26:02-26:04

I bet you one or two of you know this verse.

    26:05-26:30

John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, "Whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." This is the most famous verse of the Bible, because it sums up the entirety of the Bible in four statements, really.

    26:31-26:34

God loves, God gave, man believes, man lives.

    26:37-26:41

God loves the world so much, and love is always expressed through giving.

    26:42-26:43

He loves the world so much that He gave.

    26:43-26:44

    What did He give?

    26:45-26:47

God and Son. That's how much God loves the world.

    26:49-26:56

That whosoever believes will have eternal life.

    26:58-27:21

And this is man's responsibility. Your part of salvation is found in a word used seven times in today's passage. Seven times he says the word, or some form Anyone who believes can be saved.

    27:23-27:26

Anyone who believes can be saved.

    27:27-27:32

And anyone who does not believe is condemned.

    27:35-27:37

Like, "Alright Pastor Jeff, hang on, stop for a second.

    27:39-27:53

You just spent all this time saying that salvation is solely the work of the Holy Spirit, and it's all God and it's all Him and like the wind and then you sit some bunch of trampoline or whatever, but you spend all this time talking about it's only the work of God.

    27:53-27:57

Now all of a sudden, your point number three says you're part of salvation is believing.

    27:57-28:00

So you're like, all right, Pastor Jeff, how do you reconcile these two things?

    28:00-28:04

That it's like all God, but we have a part and how do we have a part of it's all God?

    28:04-28:05

Is it a work of God?

    28:06-28:06

Is it a work of man?

    28:07-28:08

    Are you more Calvinist?

    28:08-28:09

    Are you more Arminian?

    28:09-28:11

So which is it, Pastor Jeff?

    28:12-28:13

    And the answer is yes.

    28:17-28:17

    You are loved.

    28:20-28:28

Listen, the Bible never tries to reconcile these two truths.

    28:29-28:35

There is no passage in your Bible that tries to explain how all of this fits together.

    28:36-28:40

But the Bible very plainly teaches both of these truths.

    28:42-28:56

That salvation is according to God's sovereignty, and at the same time, we are commanded to believe in God's provision that He provided.

    29:00-29:01

Do you know what our problem is?

    29:02-29:03

    It's pride.

    29:04-29:07

Because in our pride, we want to understand that, right?

    29:08-29:10

We want to be able to explain it.

    29:11-29:13

And like, can we put this in a neat little flow chart?

    29:13-29:19

Or can we make a neat little Sunday school outline that explains exactly how salvation works?

    29:19-29:22

And the answer is, you can't do it.

    29:25-29:27

And you have to be okay with that.

    29:29-29:35

You have to be okay with the fact that God is bigger than your brain can understand.

    29:36-29:42

And His ways are more awesome than we can possibly unravel.

    29:43-29:53

And you have to be okay with that because the truth is, there's a lot of stuff that I can't explain.

    29:54-29:58

I believe it, but I can't explain it.

    29:58-30:01

There's a lot of stuff like that in my life.

    30:01-30:04

Anybody else like that, that you're like, you know what Pastor Jeff, yeah, I'm with you.

    30:05-30:08

There's a lot of stuff in my life I can't explain.

    30:08-30:09

    Anybody else like that?

    30:09-30:10

Let me give you an example.

    30:11-30:13

You know something I can't explain?

    30:15-30:15

    Tylenol.

    30:20-30:21

Apparently I'm alone on this one.

    30:24-30:26

But that horse is out of the barn, so here we go.

    30:28-30:34

I can't explain Tylenol, because here it is, you have a headache, what do you do?

    30:34-30:35

    You take a Tylenols, right?

    30:36-30:38

Or your knee hurts, what do you do?

    30:39-30:40

    You take a Tylenol, right?

    30:40-30:42

Or your back hurts, what do you do?

    30:42-30:43

    You take a Tylenol.

    30:44-30:47

How does that medicine know where to go when you take it?

    30:48-30:52

Because you just, it all goes in your mouth and down your throat, right?

    30:53-31:00

How does it know when it gets in there, okay, this is the part that's hurting, So this is the part that I need to medicinally affect.

    31:00-31:01

    How does it know?

    31:08-31:10

    I don't know how it...

    31:13-31:14

But I'm gonna tell you something else.

    31:15-31:17

I have never laid awake at night.

    31:17-31:28

I've never laid awake at night, tossing and turning, thinking to myself, you know what, I'm not taking another Tylenol until I figure out exactly how that stuff works.

    31:30-31:31

    I've never done that.

    31:34-31:37

You don't have to understand how it works.

    31:39-31:41

You know your part and you do your part, right?

    31:42-31:44

I don't need to understand how Tylenol works.

    31:44-31:45

I know my part, my part is what?

    31:46-31:49

Take the recommended dosage at the recommended times and it works.

    31:50-31:58

I believe that, so I act upon that, but I don't understand it, but I believe it, And I act upon it, but I can't quite explain how it works.

    31:58-32:01

But I believe it, and I act upon it.

    32:03-32:05

And that's how it is with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    32:05-32:11

Can we, as a church, can we just rest there to say, I don't fully understand it, but I believe it, and I act on it.

    32:11-32:14

I can't fully explain how God does everything he does.

    32:16-32:17

    But I, but I what?

    32:18-32:20

But I believe it, and I what?

    32:21-32:22

    And I act on it.

    32:25-32:26

In church, this is how it works with salvation.

    32:30-32:35

I can't explain how God's sovereignty and man's responsibility fit together.

    32:38-32:40

Do you know what the glorious news is about that?

    32:41-32:42

    Here's the glorious news.

    32:44-32:48

My salvation isn't based on me being able to explain God.

    32:48-32:49

    Isn't that good news?

    32:50-32:54

That someday I'm not gonna die and stand before God God's like, "All right, here's the thing.

    32:55-33:00

You explain how salvation works, you have a home in heaven." Like, who's getting in?

    33:00-33:04

Nobody, because your salvation isn't based on you being able to explain it.

    33:04-33:07

Your salvation, according to Jesus, is based on what?

    33:08-33:11

Believing it, it's based on believing it.

    33:14-33:16

So here's three things you must believe about believing.

    33:18-33:19

We're gonna finish up here, it's all from the text.

    33:21-33:23

Three things you must believe about believing.

    33:24-33:26

Letter A, God's heart is to save.

    33:28-33:29

Okay, God's heart is to save.

    33:29-33:37

Lest anybody get any goofy ideas at this point that salvation is some arbitrary, eeny, meeny, miny, moe thing that God does.

    33:37-33:40

Scripture clearly teaches that is not the case.

    33:40-33:41

    Look at verse 17.

    33:44-34:02

Jesus goes on, he says, "For God did not send his son into the world "to condemn the world, "but in order that the world might be saved through him." God sent His Son to save, and He rightly could have sent Jesus into the world to condemn us.

    34:02-34:03

He rightly could have done that.

    34:04-34:11

He rightly could have sent His Son to inform us of our sin and the inevitable consequences of our sin.

    34:11-34:13

He could have sent His Son to do that. Right?

    34:15-34:18

Jesus could have showed up and said, "Well, you're heading to hell.

    34:19-34:22

"See you at the great white throne," and then went back to heaven.

    34:22-34:27

And he would have been in his right to do that, to show up to condemn us.

    34:27-34:36

But he sent his son, Jesus points out here in verse 17, he sent his son for the purpose of saving anyone who would believe in him.

    34:36-34:43

And you've got to stop for a second and think about how awesome that is that God sent his son to save us, not condemn us.

    34:43-34:46

He sent his son to save us, not condemn us.

    34:47-34:48

Think about how awesome that is.

    34:48-34:56

Imagine as a teenager, just imagine that as a teenager, your dad has a classic car, okay?

    34:56-35:02

He has some really old classic car that he sort of poured all of his money and life into.

    35:03-35:07

As a teenager, you sneak that car out 'cause you don't impress your friends, right?

    35:08-35:12

You sneak that car out and you're speeding on icy roads and you crash the car.

    35:14-35:16

Okay, you have that scene in your head?

    35:16-35:19

Maybe for some of you, a lot of this hits too close to home.

    35:20-35:22

    But you crashed a car.

    35:22-35:22

    You have this now.

    35:23-35:27

Imagine in the scene, you're standing beside the crashed car that you snuck out without permission.

    35:27-35:28

    You wrecked it.

    35:28-35:31

Dad's baby that he put all his time and money and effort into.

    35:32-35:34

And he spent years restoring this thing.

    35:35-35:37

And now you're standing beside this smashed car.

    35:39-35:40

You have yourself in the scene?

    35:42-35:42

    OK.

    35:43-35:45

Okay, next thing in the scene is your dad shows up.

    35:47-35:48

You see your dad walking towards you.

    35:51-35:52

    What are you thinking?

    35:54-35:54

    What do you think?

    35:54-35:55

    He's going to kill me.

    35:56-35:56

    What are you thinking?

    35:57-36:02

You're thinking, it was a good run, but my life is over, right?

    36:03-36:04

    That's what you're thinking.

    36:04-36:05

    Dad shows up.

    36:06-36:07

    You get there, car crash.

    36:08-36:08

    Dad shows up.

    36:11-36:12

You're like, he showed up to condemn me.

    36:13-36:16

He showed up to say, "What is the matter with you?

    36:16-36:18

I can't believe you did this to my baby.

    36:19-36:21

I can't believe, you are so dead.

    36:23-36:33

And then you are so grounded." But instead, imagine, imagine dad shows up on the, back in the seat, rewind here.

    36:34-36:35

    You're standing there, crash car.

    36:35-36:35

    You're still there.

    36:36-36:37

You end up, dad shows up.

    36:41-36:48

And he says, "We're gonna have to get this thing towed, then we're gonna get you to the hospital, make sure you're okay.

    36:48-36:51

And then we're gonna make sure you have a car for your date on Friday.

    36:52-36:57

All right, let's go." Wouldn't you be like, "What in the world just happened?

    36:58-37:00

I thought dad was gonna condemn me and what did he do?

    37:01-37:02

    He showed up to what?

    37:03-37:04

He showed up to give me grace.

    37:05-37:06

He showed up to forgive me.

    37:07-37:20

He showed up to restore me." In the same way when God came to earth, it wasn't as it should have been to give you the mother of all rebukes, it was a rescue mission of grace.

    37:21-37:23

So God's heart is to save, okay?

    37:25-37:27

Secondly, believing is what makes a difference.

    37:27-37:27

    Verse 18.

    37:29-38:02

Verse 18 says, Jesus goes on, "Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." Again, church, it's not about your works, it's not about your morality, it's not about your church attendance. I can't possibly state it any simpler than this. Do you see this? Jesus said, "Believe, not condemned. Not believe, condemned." The issue is belief.

    38:02-38:03

    That's the issue.

    38:05-38:05

    It's belief.

    38:08-38:10

So what do you have to do to go to hell?

    38:12-38:13

    Commit some horrible sin?

    38:14-38:15

    Intentionally hurt someone?

    38:16-38:16

    No.

    38:18-38:20

    The answer is nothing.

    38:22-38:23

You don't have to do a thing to go to hell.

    38:24-38:25

You can just go through life.

    38:26-38:34

You can live and do whatever you want to do, but you have to know that because you are by birth and by choice.

    38:34-38:39

Jesus says here in verse 18, "You already stand condemned." That's your natural state.

    38:39-38:41

You don't have to do something to get condemned.

    38:41-38:45

You're already in a position of condemnation.

    38:49-38:55

But when you believe or receive Jesus, it's the same thing we saw in chapter 1 verse 12.

    38:56-38:58

You receive Jesus Christ believing in His name.

    38:59-39:01

Jesus promised you will never be condemned.

    39:01-39:06

No matter who you are, no matter what you've done, you will never be condemned to hell for your sin.

    39:08-39:11

So here you have to see very clearly, church, the crux of the matter.

    39:12-39:23

What determines your eternal destiny all boils down to whether or not you have chosen to believe in God's provision for salvation, which is the person of Jesus Christ.

    39:25-39:32

And finally, where you stand with the light reveals where you stand with God.

    39:34-39:37

Jesus said, "And this is the judgment, that light has come into the world.

    39:38-39:41

And people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil.

    39:43-39:50

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light, and does not come into the light, lest his work should be exposed.

    39:50-40:04

But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that His works have been carried out in God." Where you stand with the light reveals where you stand with God.

    40:06-40:08

Jesus said this is a matter of proof here, right?

    40:08-40:09

You're looking for some evidence from your life?

    40:10-40:11

    Here's some evidence.

    40:11-40:22

"Unbelief, living in sin, if that's you, you prefer to stay in the dark." I believe that that's metaphorical, but I also believe that's literal at the same time.

    40:23-40:26

I mean, think about it. How many sins are literally done in the dark?

    40:26-40:27

    Think about that.

    40:28-40:35

Whether it's having an affair, drug use, pornography, stealing, how many sins are literally done in the dark?

    40:35-40:37

Sin just loves to stay hidden.

    40:38-40:41

Sin says, "You know what? I wouldn't want my wife to know what I'm doing.

    40:41-40:43

I wouldn't want my pastor to know what I'm doing.

    40:43-40:46

I wouldn't want my boss to find out what I'm doing.

    40:46-40:50

I would be so ashamed if people found out what it is that I'm doing.

    40:50-40:53

I would be like completely mortified.

    40:56-41:05

But the person who believes, who does what is true, he or she comes to the light, because they say, "I have nothing to hide.

    41:07-41:16

God is at work in me, and I pray that God is at work through me, and I don't care if anyone sees, I have nothing at all that I'm ashamed of.

    41:19-41:20

    I'm walking in the light.

    41:22-41:27

The question after looking at this passage just simply lands on one thing.

    41:28-41:32

It's, "Do you believe?" Do you believe?

    41:35-41:37

Do you believe that God loves you?

    41:38-41:38

    Do you believe that?

    41:40-41:44

Do you believe that through Jesus Christ your sin is gone forever?

    41:49-41:50

But what does your lifestyle prove?

    41:52-41:54

Do you walk in the shadows or have you come into the light?

    41:56-41:57

    Do you believe?

    41:59-42:02

Do you believe in God's provision?

    42:03-42:05

I'm going to ask our worship team and ushers to make their way forward.

    42:06-42:10

We're going to close our time by receiving the Lord's Supper.

    42:13-42:22

Just as Moses lifted up the bronze serpent and said to Israel, Look at God's provision lifted up before you and be saved.

    42:25-42:37

Church, we too are going to be looking at God's provision who once was lifted up before the world and even now He saves us.

    42:40-42:46

And we're going to look again through the participation in the Lord's Supper.

    42:47-42:58

So as the worship team plays, the elements are going to be passed out, and after everyone receives, I'm going to ask you to hold on to it, I'm going to stand up, and I'm going to lead us in receiving the Lord's Supper.

    43:00-43:03

Just as Moses lifted up that serpent.

    43:04-43:10

Now, when Jesus Christ was lifted up on the cross, that was a once-and-for-all event.

    43:11-43:18

We don't believe when we receive the Lord's Supper that we are crucifying Him again, because He died once for all.

    43:20-43:24

But in the metaphorical sense, we are lifting Him up in the sense of exalting Him.

    43:24-43:29

We're lifting high the name of Jesus to say He is God's means of salvation.

    43:31-43:33

He died to take away your sin.

    43:34-43:36

He rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    43:37-43:41

And His command to us was that we would believe.

    43:44-43:48

And in receiving the Lord's Supper, this is exactly what you're doing.

    43:49-44:10

You're saying, "I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, who takes away my sin." The Bible tells us on the night that Jesus was betrayed, He took bread and He broke it and He gave thanks, and He said, "This is My body, which is broken for you.

    44:11-44:23

Eat this in remembrance of Me." After the meal, Jesus took the cup and He said, "This is the blood of the new covenant which is poured out for the forgiveness of sins.

    44:24-44:25

Drink this in remembrance of Me."

Small Group Discussion
Read John 3:1-21

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Someone once said to me, angrily, “It doesn’t matter, God just picks who He wants saved anyways.” How would you respond to that?

  3. When it comes to salvation, are you more Calvinist (God chooses who comes to Him) or Armenian (man makes the choice to come to God)? Why? What about the side where you don’t lean makes it harder to believe? (That is, if you believe God chooses, why do you struggle thinking man has a choice? Or if you believe it’s man’s choice, why do you struggle believing it’s God that chooses?)

  4. Jesus used the word “believe” seven times in this passage. How would you define what it means to believe?

BREAKOUT
Pray for one another to truly understand what it means to be “born again”. Ask the Holy Spirit to move in your heart and the hearts of those who come to HBC.

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Zeal

Introduction:

Jesus Knows Your Heart... (John 2:13-25):

  1. And He won't Ignore your Irreverence . (John 2:13-17)

Psalm 69:9 - For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

  2. And He won't Appease your into Animosity . (John 2:18-22)

Mark 14:56-58 - For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'"

Matthew 27:39-40 - And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross."

  1. And He won't be Fooled by your "Faith" . (John 2:23-25)

3 Danger Signs that your Faith is a Show:

  1. You don't exercise personal / private disciplines
  2. You harbor secret sin
  3. You don't see the Fruit of the Spirit in your life (see Gal 5:22)

  • 01:10-01:15

Open up your Bibles with me, please, to John 2.

    01:15-01:21

At my former church, we dealt with a man quite often who was a bit of a con man, but not a very good one.

    01:22-01:24

    His name was Billy Parker.

    01:24-01:26

Mark Ward, do you remember Billy Parker?

    01:26-01:28

We had him at Friday night church sometimes.

    01:28-01:31

But he was a con man, but not a very good one.

    01:32-01:34

And he tried many times to con us.

    01:34-01:44

But my favorite was one time he had walked up to the church and he had shaved his head, and he took magic marker and drew all over his head.

    01:45-01:47

In his mind it was to be some sort of a disguise, I suppose.

    01:48-02:06

But he went to Pastor Bob Huber, who I was serving under, and he said, "Hey, I'm kind of new in town here, and I'm getting these cancer treatments, and I need some money to help me out for these cancer treatments." We've had so many run-ins with this guy.

    02:07-02:13

Bob just looked at him, he goes, "What are you doing?" He goes, "Billy. Billy, I know it's you." And I'm not making this up.

    02:13-02:15

Billy's response was, "Whoa, whoa, no, no, no.

    02:16-02:19

My name's not Billy Parker." That's a true story.

    02:20-02:25

Well, later in life, Billy, he came to Christ and died a few days after.

    02:26-02:29

But in his early years, he was a fake.

    02:30-02:32

He tried to rip off the church.

    02:32-02:35

And I could tell you countless stories about that.

    02:35-02:43

people that we've encountered that were putting on a show because they wanted to take advantage of the people of God.

    02:43-02:47

And it was infuriating, to say the least.

    02:47-02:51

But that's exactly what Jesus dealt with in the very beginning of His ministry.

    02:51-02:57

He dealt with people who were being fake, trying to take advantage of other people.

    02:58-02:59

And Jesus didn't take it lightly.

    03:00-03:03

The passage we're going to look at today is a sharp contrast from last week.

    03:03-03:06

Last week we saw Jesus move out of compassion.

    03:07-03:09

Remember the wine ran out at the wedding?

    03:09-03:13

Then Jesus compassionately turned the water into wine.

    03:14-03:23

Well, here in this passage, Jesus is moved out of anger, and His anger comes from His zeal for authentic worship.

    03:24-03:30

In the thesis of this passage, you're going to see today there's encounters with three different groups of people.

    03:30-03:33

The thesis is at the very end of verse 25.

    03:33-03:34

    Look at your Bibles.

    03:34-03:46

The very last phrase says, "For He (Jesus) Himself knew what was in man." He Himself knew what was in man.

    03:46-03:51

The Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    03:52-03:55

And this year, we're going after knowing Jesus.

    03:56-04:04

But as we saw a couple of weeks ago when the first disciples were introduced to Jesus, Jesus knows us completely. He knows who loves Him.

    04:04-04:08

He knows who truly believes in Him, and He knows who doesn't.

    04:08-04:12

And these three encounters we're looking at today are all about the latter.

    04:13-04:21

So if you're a fake, I would encourage you to look and listen very closely to what's happening in this passage.

    04:22-04:33

On your outline, again based on verse 25, here's what we're going to see in the passage, "Jesus Knows Your Heart." Jesus knows your heart, number one, and He won't ignore your irreverence.

    04:34-04:35

    He won't ignore your irreverence.

    04:36-04:37

Look at the text with me.

    04:38-04:46

Verse 13 says, "The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem." The event you're about to see, Jesus actually did twice.

    04:47-04:49

Once at the beginning of His ministry, and once at the end.

    04:49-04:51

And it says that He went to celebrate the Passover.

    04:52-04:54

    That comes from Exodus 12.

    04:54-05:00

It was an annual feast for Israel, remembering God's deliverance from Egypt.

    05:00-05:08

So during this time, Jews from everywhere all came to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices.

    05:09-05:13

And conservative estimate was there was at least a million people there.

    05:13-05:20

Some historians say there could have been upwards of three million people, all converging to celebrate the Passover.

    05:20-05:27

The point is, there were a ton of people cramming into the temple for this event.

    05:27-05:43

Verse 14 says, "In the temple, he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting there." So in the temple, specifically in the courtyard, notice the Bible says that there were two kinds of businessmen.

    05:44-05:47

The first kind were the animal sellers.

    05:48-05:49

    What were they there for?

    05:50-06:01

People were coming from a very long way away to offer sacrifice, and it would have been inconvenient to bring your sacrifice if you had to travel a great distance.

    06:01-06:07

So, these people, conveniently, right in the temple, had sacrifices for sale.

    06:07-06:18

"You don't have to bring one, just show up, and we will give you a sacrifice, we will sell you a sacrifice right here." But there was another thing that they did.

    06:18-06:22

You know, the sacrifice that was offered had to be without blemish.

    06:22-06:24

It had to be absolutely perfect.

    06:25-06:33

So when people would show up with their sacrifices, these sellers would look at them and say, "You know what? You've got some blemishes here, you've got some problems here.

    06:33-06:44

This one's not acceptable to the Lord, so you're not going to be able to use this one, but you're in luck." I just so happen to have some animal sacrifices for sale right here.

    06:45-06:52

"You just give me yours, and I'll sell you one of mine." And what do you think the markup was on these animals?

    06:53-06:53

    Right.

    06:54-06:57

So there were the animal sellers, there were also the money changers.

    06:57-06:58

    Like, what was their deal?

    06:59-07:02

Well, when you arrived, you had to pay the temple tax.

    07:02-07:03

    That was required.

    07:03-07:06

That wasn't a voluntary thing, that was a required thing.

    07:07-07:12

Well, people, again, were coming from all over, so you had to exchange currency.

    07:12-07:16

And these people all so conveniently were seated right there!

    07:16-07:23

And they would be glad to exchange your currency for the right currency so that you could pay your temple tax.

    07:24-07:27

I ask you again, what do you think the markup was on that?

    07:27-07:28

So do you have the picture?

    07:29-07:35

That Jesus walks into the temple, and when he gets into the courtyards, this is what he sees.

    07:36-07:40

We're going to pause here and say, "Well, wait a minute." Again, what was the purpose of the temple?

    07:41-07:46

This was a placement for prayer and worship and reverence for God.

    07:47-07:49

And at this point, they turned it into Walmart.

    07:50-07:54

It was this complete irreverence that drove Jesus to anger.

    07:54-08:01

Look at verse 15. It says, "And making a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple with the sheep and oxen.

    08:02-08:09

And He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables." Like cords. Where did Jesus get the cords from?

    08:09-08:10

Well, they would have been laying everywhere.

    08:11-08:13

To tie the animals up, tie their cages shut.

    08:13-08:16

There would have just been cords laying around because of the animals.

    08:16-08:20

So Jesus grabbed a bunch of these cords and he braided a whip and he drove them out.

    08:21-08:24

There's some things that I read in the Bible that I think are kind of funny.

    08:24-08:35

It says in verse 15 that he drove them out of the temple, it says, "with the sheep and the oxen." I just have this picture in my head of Jesus with the whip and the people running from Jesus and the sheep and oxen going with the people.

    08:35-08:39

Like, "Hey, what did we do?" You know, but he drove them all out.

    08:39-08:42

Like, you and your animals out.

    08:43-08:44

    He drove them out.

    08:44-08:49

It says he dumped the coins and he flipped the tables of the money changers.

    08:50-08:51

I mean, can you imagine this scene?

    08:51-08:54

Can you wrap your brain around this scene?

    08:55-08:59

The temple was packed and this was the most important holiday for the Jews.

    08:59-09:01

And at this point, here's something you have to remember.

    09:02-09:04

Jesus was an unknown at this point.

    09:04-09:10

You see, while this was happening, people weren't like, "Oh, look, there goes Jesus." This was the beginning of his ministry.

    09:10-09:12

There weren't a lot of people that really knew who he was.

    09:13-09:14

    So here's what they see.

    09:14-09:20

They see some 30-year-old Jewish guy just going through driving everybody out of the temple.

    09:20-09:22

Like, what is going on with that guy?

    09:23-09:27

But you have to see that there's something kind of miraculous that happens in this account.

    09:28-09:30

First was he threw them all out.

    09:30-09:32

    There's something miraculous there.

    09:32-09:33

    I mean, let's be honest.

    09:33-09:43

If some 30-year-old guy walked in here today and had a whip, like Indiana Jones, like, "You guys are leaving the church!" Somebody here would just run up and grab the guy, right?

    09:43-09:50

Like, "Dude, settle down. Let's talk. What's your problem?" That didn't happen to Jesus. He was able to drive everybody out.

    09:50-09:51

    Everybody ran from Him.

    09:52-09:53

Another amazing thing is nobody got hurt.

    09:54-10:01

With all these people stampeding and again all the animals, nobody got hurt and apparently no authorities were alerted or called.

    10:01-10:06

So what happens here, there's really no human explanation that can describe it.

    10:06-10:19

Look at verse 16. "And he told those who sold the pigeons, 'Take these things away! Do not make my father's house a house of trade.'" So here Jesus verbalizes His anger.

    10:19-10:22

And you have to see that Jesus took this very personally.

    10:23-10:30

You notice He didn't say, "You shouldn't make the temple a house of trade." What did He say? How did He refer to it?

    10:30-10:32

He said, "Hey, this is my father's house.

    10:33-10:52

You don't do this to my father's house." Think of it this way. Imagine if you find out today the home in which you grew up, where you had all your memories, you had your childhood, you played wiffle ball in the backyard with your friends, the home you grew up, you go home and you find out today they're tearing it down and they're putting a dollar general in that site.

    10:53-10:54

    How would you feel?

    10:54-10:57

Wouldn't you have a sense in your heart, "This is wrong.

    10:57-11:00

This is wrong. We don't need another dollar general.

    11:00-11:03

"We don't need another Dollar General." We don't need another Dollar General!

    11:04-11:12

And you're gonna tear down this house that my dad built with his bare hands or whatever, and you're gonna put a stupid Dollar General there?

    11:12-11:13

    Like, you can't do that.

    11:14-11:23

Well, if you can sort of imagine the sentiment you would have there, multiply that times infinity, and you see what's happening in the heart of Jesus Christ.

    11:23-11:31

He's like, "This is to be like where people show up "and encounter God!" And you're making money here?

    11:31-11:38

You're ripping people off, and you're feeding your greed, which is bad enough, but you're doing it at my father's house!

    11:39-11:40

What is the matter with you?

    11:41-11:47

And I know right now, somebody's like, "Oh no, Pastor Jeff, I am so convicted.

    11:47-11:55

I am so convicted because the youth group was selling pepperoni rolls a couple months ago, and I bought one.

    11:56-11:58

And I'm no different than these people, Pastor Jeff.

    11:58-12:03

Well, we want you to know that sackcloth and ashes will be available for your repentance.

    12:03-12:11

You can come on down and we'll have elders up here who will scold you and rebuke you and shame on you.

    12:11-12:13

No, that is not the same thing.

    12:14-12:15

That is not the same thing.

    12:16-12:22

You see, buying a pepperoni roll, all the proceeds for that went to the youth mission trip.

    12:22-12:23

This is not the same thing.

    12:23-12:34

What's happening here, these are merchants taking advantage of innocent worshipers for personal financial gain, and they were doing it right in God's living room.

    12:35-12:45

In verse 17, "His disciples remembered that it was written, 'Zeal for your house will consume me.'" You see, His disciples seemed to get it. They knew the Old Testament.

    12:46-12:49

And when they saw this event, it kind of rang a bell.

    12:49-12:53

And the bell that it rang was actually Psalm 69 and verse 9.

    12:54-13:05

It says, "For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me, consumed by righteous zeal." This is what fired Jesus up.

    13:06-13:19

He was so passionate - is so passionate - about reverent worship for God, that when that's violated, Jesus was moved to enforce a mass eviction.

    13:20-13:24

Now please understand, church, this isn't just about the greed.

    13:24-13:27

This isn't just about the sellers being opportunistic.

    13:28-13:30

Those things were the fruit, they weren't the root.

    13:30-13:35

What fired Jesus up was His zeal for true worship.

    13:36-13:39

And these people were displaying complete irreverence for God.

    13:40-13:41

    Complete irreverence for God.

    13:41-13:48

I know we're supposed to worship here, but I'm going to make some cash here." That attitude that led to that action.

    13:48-13:51

You see, Jesus wasn't merely aware of it.

    13:52-13:53

    He felt that personally.

    13:54-13:57

And that's why at the end of verse... can we get Psalm 69 back up there?

    13:57-14:01

See, the first part of the verse is quoted, but the second part also certainly applies.

    14:02-14:06

It says, "The reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me." Do you know what that means?

    14:07-14:14

It means the psalmist and ultimately Jesus in this passage, What they're saying is, "God, when you are dishonored, I feel that.

    14:15-14:18

God, when you are mocked, I feel mocked.

    14:18-14:29

God, when you are degraded, I take that personally." I need to insert here that God's people, like Jesus, you should be offended at the things that offend God.

    14:29-14:34

Things like abortion, you should be offended by that, because that certainly offends God.

    14:34-14:39

Things like human trafficking, you should be offended by that, because that certainly offends God.

    14:40-14:43

Things like ripping people off financially in the name of Jesus.

    14:44-14:45

That's what was happening in this passage.

    14:46-14:48

Does that happen today at all, do you think, maybe?

    14:48-14:50

Have you ever seen some of these TV preachers?

    14:51-14:59

"Send your thousand dollar seed and God will give you a miracle." They're just... these guys. It's just next generation.

    15:00-15:06

They're taking advantage of people, using the gospel in order to make themselves wealthy.

    15:06-15:08

Not all of them on TV, but a lot of them.

    15:09-15:11

That offends God. And it should offend us.

    15:12-15:14

Now, there's nothing wrong with making money.

    15:14-15:15

There's nothing wrong with exchanging currency.

    15:16-15:19

There's nothing wrong with those things in and of themselves.

    15:20-15:22

We're dealing with a heart issue. We're dealing with a motive issue.

    15:22-15:29

And we're dealing with an issue where this was apparently being done for God, but it was really benefiting the sellers.

    15:30-15:37

And I have to ask you, and I have to ask myself, What motivates us when we come to the house of God, so to speak?

    15:38-15:43

Do I come to church to worship because of the majesty and the mercy of God?

    15:43-15:47

Or do I come to church because I have some selfish motivation behind it?

    15:47-15:51

Some people look at church as an opportunity to network for new clients.

    15:51-15:56

I'm in some business where I'm selling things, so I'm just going to different churches just to get clients.

    15:57-16:03

Now, there's nothing wrong if you are part of a church, You meet people and that stuff happens naturally because of friendships or whatever.

    16:04-16:09

I'm just saying, if that's your motive for coming to church, I don't see how you're any different than the people in this passage.

    16:10-16:21

Your motivation is, "How can I get money from people?" You see, church, the Bible says in the New Testament, "We are God's temple." And Jesus is not going to ignore our irreverence.

    16:21-16:23

Oh, He may not drive you out of the temple.

    16:24-16:27

He might not show up at Harvest Bible Chapel today and drive you out.

    16:28-16:34

But you know, when we studied the book of Revelation, we saw how Jesus Christ dealt with unbelievers at the great white throne judgment.

    16:34-16:35

He'll drive you out of heaven.

    16:36-16:41

This event at the temple is really just an earthly preview of that.

    16:41-16:44

Like, "Oh, you're going to be fake? You're going to be deceptive?

    16:44-16:45

You're going to take advantage of people?

    16:46-16:51

I will drive you out of My presence." Jesus knows your heart, okay? He knows why.

    16:51-16:56

And if it's for some selfish gain, He will not ignore your irreverence.

    16:56-17:05

Number two, drop this down, "Jesus knows your heart, and He won't appease your animosity." Okay, so we have this event that just took place.

    17:05-17:07

    Verse 18, direct reaction.

    17:08-17:17

"So the Jews said to Him, said to Jesus, 'What sign do you show us for doing these things?'" See, they were getting in Jesus' face, saying, "What gives you the right to do this?

    17:18-17:21

Who do you think you are, walking around here saying God is your Father?

    17:22-17:34

You better back that claim up." "Okay, God's boy, give us some kind of a sign to back that claim up." It's ironic, they thought that Jesus desecrated the temple.

    17:34-17:44

And Jesus is like, "Well, we have something in common. I think you did it." According to verse 23, we're going to get there in a second, Jesus did do signs.

    17:44-17:51

But as we see a few times in the Gospels, that's the servant for another time, they wanted a sign from heaven.

    17:51-17:53

You see, they wanted Jesus to perform for them.

    17:54-17:57

They wanted Jesus to put on a show. They wanted Jesus to prove Himself.

    17:58-18:00

And Jesus doesn't abide by your terms.

    18:01-18:02

    Look at Jesus' response.

    18:02-18:08

So they're like, "Back that claim up, dude." And in verse 19, Jesus answered them.

    18:09-18:11

Look at the words very closely, okay?

    18:11-18:21

Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." That's not a command. Jesus wasn't commanding them to destroy.

    18:22-18:24

    Nor was He challenging them.

    18:25-18:30

Jesus wasn't like, "Bring it on, bro. Come at Me." It wasn't that either.

    18:31-18:45

See, the syntax of what Jesus was saying, He says, "You will destroy this temple, and I'll raise it up in three days." Jesus was just merely stating future facts.

    18:46-18:56

But the reason I said you need to take a close look at that statement is because this is one of the earliest examples we have in human history of a statement going viral.

    18:57-18:59

Murph, do the kids still use that term about things going viral?

    18:59-19:00

    Is that still hip?

    19:01-19:03

You're always, I have to ask somebody younger.

    19:03-19:04

    All right.

    19:05-19:07

Do kids still say that, like something's gone viral?

    19:08-19:11

This is the first example of a statement gone viral.

    19:12-19:13

Like, why do you say that?

    19:13-19:22

Well, in Mark chapter 14, at Jesus' trial, It says, "For many bore false witness against Him, but their testimony did not agree.

    19:23-19:39

And some stood up and bore false witness against Him, saying, 'We heard Him say, "I will destroy the temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another not made with hands."'" Is that what He said? Is that what He said?

    19:39-19:43

Where did all this "hands" stuff come from? What?

    19:43-19:45

I mean, there's so many things wrong with that statement.

    19:46-19:48

That is not at all what Jesus said.

    19:48-20:00

But this statement was circulating that Jesus said something about temple destruction, temple raising Him, I don't know, but they twisted what He said at His trial.

    20:01-20:15

And also when He was on the cross, Matthew 27, Jesus is dying on the cross and those who pass by deride Him, wagging their heads and say, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days.

    20:15-20:24

"Save yourself, if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." There again, they said, "Oh, you said you were going to destroy the temple." Is that what Jesus said?

    20:24-20:26

No, that's not what He said.

    20:26-20:28

He never said He was going to destroy the temple.

    20:29-20:40

They give us a sign, Jesus was saying, "You're going to destroy the temple, and I'm going to rebuild it in three days." But they twisted His words to make it look like He was making some terroristic threat.

    20:40-20:57

Verse 20, in response to Jesus' statement, the Jews then said, "It has taken 46 years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" And John inserts here, he says, "But he was speaking about the temple of his body." They didn't get it, and they mocked him.

    20:57-21:02

46 years was the amount of time to this point of Herod's temple reconstruction project.

    21:03-21:10

So they mock him. "Oh, come on, it took 46 years, and what are you going to do?" And how did Jesus respond to that?

    21:11-21:12

How did Jesus respond? Well, look at verse 22.

    21:13-21:16

Because you're going to see the answer is, He didn't respond to it.

    21:17-21:28

It says, "When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken." Jesus didn't explain it.

    21:29-21:31

Like, why didn't Jesus explain it?

    21:31-21:36

Like, John obviously knew he was talking about His body, and they completely missed it.

    21:36-21:39

So why didn't Jesus just step in and correct them?

    21:40-21:44

Like, "Oh, I'm sorry, sir, you seem to have misunderstood my statement.

    21:44-21:49

Allow me to clarify that for you." Why didn't Jesus do that? I'll tell you why.

    21:50-21:52

It's because they didn't want to believe.

    21:52-21:55

His disciples got it, but they didn't want to believe.

    21:56-21:58

And Jesus isn't going to come to you on your terms.

    21:59-22:01

Does Jesus have to prove Himself to you?

    22:03-22:09

Like, "Oh, I'll believe in Jesus once He does this." Does He have to prove Himself to you?

    22:09-22:18

Because here's a key truth that Jesus emphasized throughout His ministry, and we see again reflected here, that if you don't want to believe, then you can't believe.

    22:19-22:25

And all the signs we've seen of God at work here in this church, all of those signs aren't going to be enough for you.

    22:25-22:31

Every sermon preached at this church is going to go in one ear and out the others.

    22:31-22:36

You're like these Jews, and you insist you're going to be hostile and hard-hearted towards Jesus.

    22:37-22:38

You're not going to get anything from Him.

    22:39-22:46

You've got an attitude or a chip on your shoulder, like, "I'll believe when He proves Himself to me." You ain't getting nothing from Him.

    22:47-22:48

    Jesus is not your performer.

    22:49-22:51

You come to Him on His terms. He doesn't come to you on yours.

    22:52-22:53

You don't want to believe, you can't believe.

    22:54-22:55

    You want proof?

    22:55-23:00

Like, "Yeah, I want Jesus to prove Himself." It's the same proof Jesus mentioned in other places in the ministry.

    23:00-23:02

There's a reference to it right here.

    23:02-23:04

Here's your proof. He raised from the dead.

    23:04-23:07

That's the proof that Jesus is who He is.

    23:07-23:10

That's the proof that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

    23:10-23:13

That's the proof that your sins are forgiven in Him.

    23:13-23:15

You have the promise of eternal life, and you have the promise of heaven.

    23:16-23:18

Your proof is that He raised from the dead.

    23:18-23:23

And if that's not enough for you, nothing will ever be enough for you.

    23:23-23:27

Because Jesus Christ is not going to appease your animosity.

    23:28-23:29

Like, "Oh, she seems to have an attitude.

    23:30-23:33

How can I coddle her? No, no, that's not how he works.

    23:33-23:35

He's not going to appease your animosity.

    23:35-23:38

And finally, he won't be fooled by your faith.

    23:39-23:41

He won't be fooled by your faith.

    23:41-23:43

Notice the word "faith" is in quotes.

    23:44-23:45

    There's a reason for that.

    23:45-23:46

    Look at verse 23.

    23:47-23:57

It says, "Now when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover feast, many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing." And you're like, "Yes!

    23:58-24:01

    It's great! Awesome! Right?

    24:02-24:02

    Mission accomplished!

    24:03-24:04

    They believed in His name.

    24:04-24:06

I mean, that's what we want, right?

    24:07-24:09

This is good, right? This is not at all.

    24:10-24:11

Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second.

    24:11-24:17

You're telling me, the verse says that many believed, and you're standing up here saying that this isn't good?

    24:18-24:18

    It's not at all.

    24:19-24:20

    Look at verse 24.

    24:20-24:30

It says, "But Jesus on His part did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all people." You're like, "What am I missing?" Here's what we miss in the English.

    24:30-24:31

    This is in the Greek.

    24:32-24:34

And this is why the word faith is in quotes.

    24:34-24:37

Because in verses 23 and 24, you have a play on words.

    24:38-24:42

Do you see in verse 23, the word believe, many believed in his name.

    24:42-24:45

Verse 24, Jesus did not entrust.

    24:45-24:46

You see the word believe and entrust.

    24:47-24:48

    You see those two words?

    24:48-24:50

In the Greek, that's the exact same word.

    24:50-24:57

If you're reading this in the original language, the way John is presenting this, in other words, here's what John is saying.

    24:57-25:01

He's saying they believed in Jesus, but Jesus didn't believe in them.

    25:01-25:02

    See that?

    25:02-25:06

Saying, "Well, they had faith in Jesus." Jesus didn't have any faith in them.

    25:07-25:08

    It's a play on words.

    25:08-25:12

Like, they seem to really be responding to Jesus.

    25:13-25:22

It says right here, "He knew all people." He's like, "No, they don't really believe." They said they believed, but Jesus knows they didn't truly believe.

    25:23-25:25

And what we have here is a false faith.

    25:26-25:31

Not everyone who says they believe in Jesus Christ actually have faith as the Bible describes it.

    25:31-25:32

    Look again at v. 24.

    25:32-25:48

It says, "But Jesus on His part did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew all people, and needed no one to bear witness about man, for He Himself knew what was in man." See, they said they believed, but Jesus knew the real condition of their heart.

    25:49-25:54

The Bible tells us that Jesus didn't need anyone to tell Him anything about anybody.

    25:55-25:57

Jesus didn't need a witness, because He knew.

    25:58-25:59

    What does that mean?

    25:59-26:01

He needed no one to bear witness.

    26:02-26:03

    What does that mean?

    26:03-26:13

It just simply means this, if you came to me, and you're like, "Hey, Pastor Jeff, I'm not sure if my co-worker is a Christian." I would say, "Well, tell me about them.

    26:13-26:19

Let me ask you some questions." And I would ask you a series of questions about what evidence is used.

    26:19-26:21

I don't know where anybody's heart is with the Lord.

    26:21-26:22

That's between the person and God.

    26:22-26:24

I would just ask them some questions.

    26:25-26:28

What do they talk like? What are the things they're into? Do they attend worship at all?

    26:29-26:38

Have you had any spiritual conversations? I would have to get information from you if I was going to take a guess as to whether or not I think that person might be a Christian, right?

    26:38-26:42

And that's what verse 25 is saying. It says Jesus needed no one to bear witness.

    26:42-26:46

Jesus didn't need that. Jesus didn't need to say, "Oh, I don't know if you're a believer.

    26:46-26:50

Tell me a little bit about your life." He just knew, because He knows your heart.

    26:50-26:51

    Jesus didn't need information.

    26:52-26:56

Jesus didn't need to try to put clues together to make a guess.

    26:56-26:57

    He just knows.

    26:57-26:58

    Listen to me very closely.

    26:59-27:01

If you're a fraud, He knows.

    27:02-27:04

If you're faking it, He knows.

    27:04-27:06

If you're putting on a show, He knows.

    27:07-27:13

And the truly tragic thing about this is you can fool everybody, and the Bible says you can even fool yourself.

    27:13-27:18

That's why as we head down the homestretch here, I just real quick, this is a whole other sermon series that we've done in the past.

    27:18-27:22

I can't close without sharing this though.

    27:22-27:25

Quickly, three danger signs that your faith is a show.

    27:25-27:26

You need to be objective here.

    27:27-27:29

    I mean, nobody thinks they're a fake.

    27:30-27:34

That's why we have the objective Word of God that we can examine.

    27:34-27:38

I just want to give you three quick ones today.

    27:39-27:42

Three quick danger signs that your faith might just be for show.

    27:43-27:48

The first one is, letter A, you don't exercise personal, private disciplines.

    27:48-27:51

You don't exercise personal, private, spiritual disciplines.

    27:52-27:54

We did a sermon series on that earlier this year, Matthew 6.

    27:55-28:03

Praying, giving, fasting - all of these things are to be done as worship and secretly, just between you and God.

    28:03-28:24

And if your spirituality is only exercised in church, in front of other people, or at small group, in front of other people, if that's the only time you open your Bible, if that's the only time that you're praying, If that's the only time that you're giving so that other people know, or the idea of fasting is completely foreign to you.

    28:25-28:30

I don't know your heart, but I do know based on the Word of God that these are huge warning signs.

    28:30-28:38

If you don't have a personal, private thing with God, letter B is sort of the other side of the coin is you harbor secret sin.

    28:39-28:43

In other words, your spiritual life, you make public.

    28:44-28:46

but your sin you keep private.

    28:47-28:51

That's a sign that your faith is a show, it's a performance for other people.

    28:51-28:58

You see, your spiritual disciplines are to be private, and your sin should be public in that you should be looking for accountability.

    28:59-29:03

You should be part of a small group where you can confess to people, "Look, here's where I'm struggling.

    29:03-29:06

    Here's where I need prayer." That's authenticity.

    29:06-29:11

People that are putting on a show, "A small group is too uncomfortable.

    29:11-29:16

I don't want accountability." Do you have something going on in your life right now that you keep hidden from your family?

    29:16-29:32

Like, "There's a whole section of my life that my wife doesn't know about." "I have this whole thing happening that my husband has no idea." Or, "My parents don't really know what I'm like when I go to school." And that's a huge red flag.

    29:33-29:37

Do you have a section of your life that you keep hidden from your church, from your small group?

    29:37-29:39

You don't exercise personal, private, spiritual disciplines.

    29:39-29:43

    Instead, you're harboring secret sin.

    29:43-29:48

Letter C, another danger sign that your faith is a show is you don't see the fruit of the Spirit in your life.

    29:49-29:57

Galatians 5, "As the Holy Spirit indwells every believer..." These are characteristics that you should see in your life and are growing.

    29:57-30:04

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

    30:04-30:06

The Bible says these are the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

    30:06-30:12

You should see them present in your life, and you should see them growing in your life.

    30:12-30:18

If you say, "I don't really see those things in my life," well, then that means the Holy Spirit is not indwelling you.

    30:18-30:24

And if the Holy Spirit's not indwelling you, then you're not a true believer because the Holy Spirit indwells all true believers.

    30:25-30:27

None of us have these things nailed down perfectly.

    30:27-30:28

    I'm not saying that.

    30:29-30:31

What I'm saying is, do you see these things growing in your life?

    30:32-30:33

Do you see the presence there?

    30:34-30:35

Do you see, "You know what?

    30:36-30:43

I know I'm not as patient as I need to be, but I'm a lot more patient today than I was this time last year because the Holy Spirit's working on me.

    30:43-30:44

    Do you see growth?

    30:45-30:47

If you don't, that's a huge danger sign.

    30:47-30:49

Maybe your faith is a show.

    30:49-30:50

You know, you can fool me.

    30:51-30:52

    I've been fooled many times.

    30:53-30:53

    You can fool me.

    30:54-30:56

    You can even...

    30:56-31:00

If you're married, you can even fool your spouse, the person that you spend the most time with.

    31:00-31:02

You can even fool that person.

    31:02-31:06

And if you're a really good fooler, you can even fool your grandma.

    31:07-31:10

But you will never fool Jesus Christ.

    31:10-31:14

And this year we are going after knowing Jesus.

    31:15-31:20

And again, just as we saw a couple of weeks ago, Jesus knows us completely.

    31:20-31:26

He knows who loves Him genuinely from the heart, and He knows who is pretending.

    31:27-31:34

He knows who refuses to believe, and He knows who's using people for personal gain.

    31:34-31:36

Maybe today's the day it's time to stop playing pretend.

    31:37-31:44

experience the true joy and blessing comes from an authentic faith of sincerely knowing Jesus.

    31:45-31:47

Will you bow your heads with me please?

    31:47-31:49

As our worship team makes their way back forward.

    31:49-31:51

I want you to bow your head.

    31:51-31:55

In this passage, we looked at three different groups of phonies.

    31:56-32:03

Some making money, some angry at Jesus, some just giving lip service, but their hearts were far from.

    32:03-32:05

    Is that you this morning?

    32:06-32:09

And that's you this morning, that you would say, "You know what?

    32:09-32:10

People don't know who I really am.

    32:10-32:15

People think I'm fired up for the Lord, but I'm really not." Today's the day of confession.

    32:15-32:19

Today's the day that you need to say, "God, I don't want to play games.

    32:19-32:22

And I might have tricked some people, but I'm not going to trick Jesus Christ.

    32:23-32:23

    He knows my heart.

    32:24-32:31

And if I'm going to know Him, I've got to stop making it a show." Father, as we come before You today, God, You know our hearts.

    32:31-32:33

God, You know my heart better than I do.

    32:33-32:40

Father, You know our desire has never been to be the biggest, trendiest, coolest church in town.

    32:40-32:42

God, You know our desire is to just be real.

    32:42-32:48

Father, I pray for our brothers and sisters here and those who are going to be listening to this message online.

    32:49-33:02

Father, I pray that we would take an objective, honest look in our lives and say, "Do I really have a walk with Christ, or do I just want people to think that I have a walk with Christ?" Father, only You can grant repentance.

    33:03-33:06

Only Your Holy Spirit can do the work that needs done.

    33:06-33:07

So we cry out to You, Father.

    33:08-33:09

We don't want to put on a show.

    33:10-33:11

    We're not here to entertain.

    33:12-33:15

All we want, simply, Father, what we truly want.

    33:15-33:21

And Father, if this is not what we truly want, I'm crying out to You that You would change our motives.

    33:22-33:24

So this is what we truly want.

    33:24-33:25

We want to know Jesus Christ.

    33:26-33:32

Help us, Father, to truly, truly and sincerely authentically come to that place.

    33:33-33:34

That's the thing that we want more than any.

    33:35-33:36

    Knowing Jesus.

    33:37-33:39

It's in His glorious name that we pray.

    33:40-33:40

    Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read John 2:13-25

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Jesus was obviously angry at the sellers in the Temple. When is it appropriate to be angry? When is it inappropriate?

  3. What are some ways churches today can become a “house of trade” (John 2:16)?

  4. Why do you think the Jews weren’t satisfied with the signs they saw? See John 2:23 and John 2:18 for reference.

  5. Why is the testimony of Scripture more important than seeing a “flashy” sign by God? See also Luke 16:31 and 2 Peter 1:17-19

BREAKOUT
Pray for one another. And pray for HBC to be a sincere house of worship with godly motives.

Knowing Jesus - Knowing His Glory

Introduction:

Manifesting His Glory - What Jesus Wants Us to Know from His First Miracle (John 2:1-12):

  1. Jesus Cares about what you Care about. (John 2:3)

Matthew 10:29-31 - Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

  1. Jesus turns Ordinary things into Extrardinary things. (John 2:9)
  2. Jesus saves the Best for Last. (John 2:10)

Romans 8:18 - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

The Gospel according to John. Are you there?

    01:14-01:23

The Gospel of John was written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    01:23-01:26

And that's our ministry theme this year is knowing Jesus.

    01:26-01:33

Can you think of anything greater to go after as a church, as a family, as individuals?

    01:33-01:37

Can you think of anything greater to go after than knowing Jesus Christ?

    01:37-01:38

    That's what we're going after.

    01:39-01:40

which we find in the Gospel of John.

    01:41-01:50

Because according to Jesus, eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ, who God the Father sent.

    01:51-01:58

We saw in chapter 1, these past three weeks, we've seen three glorious truths about knowing Jesus.

    01:59-02:01

The first one is He's made Himself known.

    02:02-02:06

That's the only way we know anything about Him is He has made Himself known.

    02:06-02:11

And we saw from John the Baptist We need to prepare ourselves to know Him.

    02:11-02:13

Any obstacles in the way, clear them out.

    02:14-02:15

Prepare the way for the Lord.

    02:17-02:25

And last week we saw that like all disciples who truly know Jesus Christ, our job is to make Him known.

    02:27-02:35

So today, Jesus' ministry sort of goes public at a wedding.

    02:37-02:51

Now, by virtue of my position, and by virtue of how long I have been doing this job, I would guess that I've probably been to more weddings than most people here.

    02:53-03:05

Therefore, it follows that I have seen more embarrassing things at weddings, more crazy things at weddings probably most people here.

    03:08-03:10

And I thought, boy, I could share some stories.

    03:10-03:13

And I had a whole bunch of stories I was going to share with you.

    03:14-03:19

I'm just going to share one, because the embarrassment was on me on this one.

    03:21-03:25

But years ago, I did a wedding for this young couple.

    03:25-03:38

They were family members of a friend of mine that I used to do services at these senior housing facilities and this young couple came to me because I knew their grandma.

    03:39-03:50

Okay, and they're like, "We do our weddings, so we went through the whole counseling and the whole rehearsal and went through the whole wedding and the whole rigmarole, so we get done with the wedding." And Erin was with me at the time.

    03:50-03:56

Sometimes she can't, because of our kid situation, can't go to weddings, but this is, I don't know, was this before kids or?

    03:57-04:00

Oh, they were small enough that we could contain them at that point.

    04:00-04:02

Okay, a babysitter could handle them at that point.

    04:02-04:36

why Aaron was able to join me on this one. So we're like, "Hey, you know, wedding and wedding reception, like, gonna be a great date, right?" Because, I mean, I was dressed up and Aaron, she just looks so beautiful and I'm like taking my girl down to the wedding reception and so we walk into the to the lobby of the banquet hall with a wedding reception. As you know, there's a table set up with all the little, you know, the cards that have the names and the table that you're, where you're supposed to sit.

    04:36-04:37

You know what I'm talking about?

    04:37-04:40

Like name, you're table one and you're table 16 or whatever.

    04:40-04:44

So Aaron and I walk in and like I said, we're just ready for the big party.

    04:46-04:47

    We're looking through the list.

    04:52-04:57

We're not with the Ms. Maybe it's not alphabetized.

    04:57-05:00

So we go back over and we're looking at the list again.

    05:02-05:09

I'm like, "Hey, do you see our name anywhere?" She's like, "Still looking." We're looking, we're looking, we're looking.

    05:11-05:18

We weren't invited to the reception of the wedding that I just held.

    05:20-05:23

So this was awkward, because now we're standing in the lobby.

    05:25-05:28

And I'm like, let's just get out of here.

    05:29-05:30

So we just kind of snuck out.

    05:30-05:31

    I'm like, you know what?

    05:32-05:33

I felt so bad for Erin.

    05:33-05:34

I'm like, I'm going to take her to dinner.

    05:34-05:38

So we ended up going down the road a little bit to another restaurant.

    05:38-05:39

I'm like, take my girl to dinner.

    05:39-05:41

So we go, have a real nice dinner.

    05:41-05:43

We ended up having a real nice date anyways.

    05:43-05:57

But we come out of the restaurant, I get back in the car and I open the door and I just happened to glimpse in the backseat of the car, I forgot to give the couple their marriage license.

    05:59-06:03

So now, and they were going on a honeymoon, so they needed the documentation.

    06:04-06:13

So I'm like, I've got to go back in there to this reception, where I wasn't invited the first time.

    06:15-06:21

So I walk back in, and I kid you not, as I walk in.

    06:22-06:32

The groom and the whole bridal party, and the bride, they're all up on the stage on their elevated place with the table, and I kid you not, the groom sees me coming.

    06:33-06:34

    And he hollers.

    06:35-06:37

He's like, "Pastor Jeff!" He goes, "Hey, hey, hey!

    06:38-07:19

If you're hungry, I think they've got some leftovers in the kitchen!" And I'm like, "Oh, you saved me some scraps from your table?" I'm like, "No, I'm just here to drop off marriage license and I gave it to him and very shamedly walked out of there but there are some crazy things that I have seen at weddings but the craziest thing that has ever happened in a wedding is right here in this passage And in Jesus' day, the wedding was the most important event in the community.

    07:21-07:22

It's a little different than weddings today.

    07:22-07:26

Today, when you have a wedding, the bride is the main event, right?

    07:26-07:28

But in this day, the groom was the main event.

    07:30-07:35

You see, the couple would get betrothed, which meant they were legally married, but they weren't together.

    07:37-07:51

But the groom would go away and prepare a place for them, and then he would, unexpected, unannounced, return one day and take his bride to be with him.

    07:52-08:05

But this return included the wedding festivities, including the wedding reception, which lasted for days, even up to a week.

    08:05-08:08

And that's important to understand because I hope the story makes sense.

    08:08-08:12

That this wasn't some hour or two long wedding party.

    08:12-08:16

This was a days long wedding party.

    08:16-08:16

    Alright?

    08:17-08:18

So look at verses 1 and 2 here.

    08:19-08:20

    John chapter 2.

    08:20-08:26

It says, "On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

    08:28-08:35

Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples." So this is the third day.

    08:35-08:39

This is the day after the whole exchange with Nathaniel we talked about last week.

    08:40-08:43

And Cana was actually a very, very, very small village.

    08:44-08:46

And Mary, Jesus' mother, was there.

    08:46-08:51

And apparently she had some sort of a role in the wedding and the coordination.

    08:53-08:56

She had some part of it you're going to see here in a second.

    08:58-09:11

Verse 3, it says, "When the wine ran out, The mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." Now this is a problem.

    09:13-09:19

Because it was the groom's job - remember I said he went away for a year to prepare a place?

    09:19-09:27

It was his job to provide for his wife, and it was his job to provide for the wedding party.

    09:28-09:40

Okay, so he just spent a year trying to prove to his in-laws that he could be a provider for this woman that he is marrying.

    09:42-10:04

And not off to a great start. Like, "What's the matter, son? You couldn't even provide for the wedding party. You think you're going to provide for my little girl? What's the matter with you?" So this was a problem. Like, what happened here? We don't know. Did he Did he underestimate how many people were coming or how much wine they were going to drink?

    10:04-10:05

    Was it just poor planning?

    10:06-10:08

Did he run out of money?

    10:08-10:11

Like, "I wanted to buy more, I just didn't have..." We don't know.

    10:13-10:17

What we do know is Mary informs Jesus.

    10:20-10:21

    And that's interesting.

    10:22-10:31

Because when you think about it, I'm not really sure at first why she would have informed Jesus, Because at this point, He hasn't done any miracles.

    10:32-10:34

So my question is, what was she expecting Him to do?

    10:36-10:48

Like, "Jesus, can you spot us some money?" Or, "Can you and your disciples pull your money together and run down to sheets or something?" I don't know what she was expecting.

    10:50-10:52

So why did she bring this problem to Jesus?

    10:52-10:58

the only real logical answer is, she was his mother.

    10:59-11:04

And for 30 years of his life, she would have seen nothing but wisdom from him, right?

    11:05-11:06

    Great choices, great ideas.

    11:07-11:09

That's all she would have ever seen from him.

    11:09-11:12

So, in this situation, who are you going to turn to?

    11:12-11:13

Who are you going to turn to for advice?

    11:14-11:16

Who are you going to turn to to try to fix this problem?

    11:17-11:19

She's like, "My son is literally perfect.

    11:19-11:26

and I'm going to turn to Him." So she goes to Jesus and she says they have no wine.

    11:27-11:27

    Look at verse 4.

    11:28-11:32

"And Jesus said to her, 'Woman, what does this have to do with Me?

    11:34-11:45

My hour has not yet come.'" Now, when you read this in the English, this can sound harsh.

    11:47-11:47

    To say, "Woman?

    11:49-11:50

What does this have to do with me?

    11:50-12:00

But you have to understand, in the Greek and in this culture and in this context, there was absolutely nothing harsh about what was said here.

    12:01-12:08

First of all, the use of the word "woman" wasn't meant in a harsh way.

    12:08-12:15

It was used in the same way that we use the word "ma'am." That it's not really personal, but it's not harsh either.

    12:16-12:24

Like "ma'am." Maybe it's actually impersonal to refer to your mother that way, but it's not harsh.

    12:24-12:36

He's like, "Ma'am." And then his statement literally is, "What to me and to you." That's the literal translation of that.

    12:37-12:39

What to me and to you.

    12:40-12:42

In our vernacular, we would say it this way.

    12:44-12:46

Why is this a "we" problem?

    12:48-12:55

I could explain this further, but I know at least the husbands in this room understand this perfectly.

    12:57-12:57

    Right, husbands?

    12:57-12:58

    Back me up here.

    12:58-12:59

    Don't be afraid.

    13:01-13:05

But when your wife says "we," what does she really mean?

    13:07-13:07

    She means you.

    13:09-13:09

    Right?

    13:09-13:10

    That's what she really means.

    13:10-13:11

When your wife says "we," she means you.

    13:12-13:56

example, we had a snake in our crawl space and Aaron said, "Jeff, we need to do something about that snake." What did she mean by that? "Jeff, you need to do something about that snake." Right? What's this "we" stuff? And see, that's what's going on in this passage. You have to see that Mary comes to Jesus And she says, "Jesus, we're out of wine! We need to do something!" And Jesus is basically saying, "What do you mean, 'we'? How am I included in this problem?" Jesus was sort of pointing out here that the nature of their relationship was changing.

    13:56-13:59

His focus is now on His ministry.

    14:01-14:07

And Jesus says, "My hour has not yet come." We're going to see that as we go through John over and over and over.

    14:07-14:10

Jesus talks about His hour, the hour, the hour.

    14:13-14:15

It's about coming to die for your sins.

    14:15-14:17

To raise from the dead to give you eternal life.

    14:17-14:23

That's what He's talking about, the hour that He fulfills what God sent Him to do.

    14:25-14:38

Basically, Jesus is saying here that His agenda is the cross, and everything in His life and His ministry is about getting to that moment where he glorifies God through his sacrifice.

    14:40-14:45

So I hope that helps you understand Jesus wasn't being harsh with His mother.

    14:46-14:48

He says, "Woman, what does this have to do with me?

    14:48-15:01

How is this a 'we' problem?" He says, "My hour has not yet come." V. 5, "His mother said to the servants, 'Do whatever He tells you.'" And I would say in general, that's good advice.

    15:01-15:03

If Jesus tells you to do something, I think you should do it.

    15:05-15:09

But again, I'm just not sure what she was thinking here.

    15:10-15:19

Because she comes to Jesus with the problem, and He's like, "This has nothing to do with me." And she still obviously assumed that He was going to do something.

    15:20-15:21

Right? I mean, that's pretty obvious.

    15:22-15:32

She goes, "Do whatever He tells you to do." Verse 6, it says, "Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding 20 or 30 gallons.

    15:34-15:41

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim.

    15:42-15:43

    Stop there for a second.

    15:44-15:50

So these jars were looking at about 120 to about 180 gallons of water total.

    15:51-15:54

And these jars were for purification.

    15:56-15:58

It was a Jewish ritual for washing.

    15:58-16:04

It wasn't so much a sanitation thing as much as it was a ritual thing.

    16:04-16:06

    It comes from Psalm 24.

    16:06-16:14

They would dip their hands in the water and hold their hands up to heaven as a way of saying, "Lord, I am clean before You." It was purely a ritual.

    16:14-16:16

That's what these jars were for.

    16:17-16:18

    And Scripture makes it clear.

    16:20-16:21

    That's what these were for.

    16:21-16:27

But notice, Jesus said to fill them, And it says they filled them to the brim.

    16:28-16:34

And the fact that it says they filled them to the brim shows you that what's about to happen is supernatural.

    16:35-17:27

Why? Because if they only filled them three-quarters of the way - and Jesus is about to turn this water into wine, spoiler alert - but if they only filled them like halfway or three-quarters, somebody would come along later and be like, "Oh yeah, Jesus just like, when they weren't looking, He snuck in and He dumped some wine in there, like ta-da, but the fact that they filled them all the way to the brim was proof that something supernatural was about to happen. Right? So just no room to add anything if they're 100% full. Verse 8, it says, "And he said to them, 'Now draw some out and take it to the master of the feast.' So they took it. When the master of the feast tasted the water now become wine and did not know where it came from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

    17:28-17:48

The master of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine, but you have kept the good wine until now." Stop there for a second.

    17:50-17:52

You know something that baffles me about this passage?

    17:52-17:54

as what's not in the passage.

    17:55-18:10

Meaning, there was no show, there was no grand display, there was no proclamation over this water.

    18:12-18:14

And you notice Jesus himself didn't even touch it.

    18:17-18:22

And only the servants knew what happened.

    18:24-18:30

Now if you look closely, you see the head waiter, or the master of the feast, same thing, the head waiter was shocked.

    18:30-18:31

    Why?

    18:32-18:34

It wasn't because he saw a miracle.

    18:34-18:47

I mean I think our minds sort of make that bridge, like, "He's shocked he saw a miracle." No, he's not shocked because of a miracle because apparently he didn't even know a miracle happened.

    18:48-18:50

So why was he so shocked?

    18:51-18:55

He was shocked because he just assumed that the groom saved the best for last.

    18:55-18:56

    Why was that shocking?

    18:57-18:57

    Because nobody does that.

    18:59-19:00

Nobody saves the best for last.

    19:02-19:09

When you have guests, especially at a wedding, You give them the good stuff first.

    19:10-19:13

And when that runs out, you're scrambling to just give them whatever's on hand.

    19:14-19:15

    I saw this firsthand.

    19:17-19:20

Years ago, we were babysitting a bunch of kids at our house.

    19:20-19:23

Our kids and a bunch of other kids at our house.

    19:23-19:26

And I remember Erin, she worked all day.

    19:27-19:28

She got all these snacks prepared.

    19:28-19:32

She had these little styrofoam bowls, you know what I'm talking about, and cleared off the coffee table.

    19:33-19:44

and she just had like this whole spread on the coffee table of all these bowls and all these snacks and Aaron worked so hard, spent hours getting all this stuff ready.

    19:46-19:47

And then the kids showed up.

    19:49-19:52

And church, it was like a swarm of locusts.

    19:53-19:53

    (roaring)

    19:54-19:57

They blew through there, my kids too, okay, my kids too.

    19:58-21:06

They blew through there and under two minutes snacks were gone and there were even some bites taken out of the styrofoam bowls. So Erin spent all day preparing and like gone. So Erin was going through the cupboards and she was just pulling everything she could out of the cupboards and the kids were mowing it down. Fruit snacks and pretzels and yams and paprika and she's just pulling everything out of the cupboards. And the kids collectively mowed it down. But the point is, the good stuff goes out first, right? And then the leftovers... that's why this head waiter was shocked. He goes, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a second here. You brought out the good stuff at the end. That's really different." Then verse 11 says, "Now this, the first of his sons, Jesus did at Cana and and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

    21:07-21:28

After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and His brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there for a few days." So, Jesus made His miracle debut at a wedding, and He did it by turning water into wine.

    21:30-21:31

And I'm just going to be honest with you.

    21:33-21:34

That's not how I would have booked that.

    21:35-21:42

If I was like Jesus' public relations guy, you're about to perform your first miracle.

    21:43-21:50

You're about to show people again, you are the Son of God.

    21:51-21:52

You are God in the flesh.

    21:55-21:56

Here's how we're doing this, Jesus.

    21:56-22:07

What I would have done is I would have had at the temple during one of the peak, busy, feast season times, and I would have had Him transfigured at the temple.

    22:07-22:09

So everybody saw this is God.

    22:11-22:12

That's not how He did it.

    22:13-22:17

Or I thought maybe Jesus should have kicked off His ministry with the resurrection.

    22:18-22:27

Maybe start off with the cross and the resurrection, and think of how that would have got people's attention, but in His perfect wisdom, that's not how He did it.

    22:29-22:34

And see, with all of this that happened in the passage, to me the most profound statement is in verse 11.

    22:35-23:05

It says, "This the first of His signs Jesus did at Canaan and Galilee." Here's the profound phrase to me, "And manifested His glory." And I read this passage and I think, "This is how Jesus chose to manifest His glory?" Like this? Like water to wine? Like no fanfare?

    23:05-23:09

I mean, what does this manifest about His glory?

    23:11-23:12

Like I said, He did it quietly.

    23:13-23:16

He didn't announce it. There was no "Ta-da!" There was no big production.

    23:17-23:20

There was no "Wine by Jesus" banner put up.

    23:22-23:39

So I'm reading this this week, and I'm thinking, "The Scripture's clear, this is how He manifested His glory, but how does this manifest His glory?" In other words, what does this tell you about Jesus?

    23:39-23:42

Right? We want to know Jesus, so what does this tell you about Jesus?

    23:43-23:58

They're like, "Well, it tells you that if you have a wedding, you should invite Jesus." And I thought, "Well, if Jesus was invited to a Pittsburgh wedding, would He bless the cookie table?" What does this tell us about Jesus?

    23:58-24:06

And the truth is, if you look closely, this miracle gives us some life-changing truths about Jesus Christ.

    24:06-24:11

Jesus spoke so much about who He is through this miracle.

    24:12-24:13

    Let's look at it.

    24:14-24:24

So on your outline, "Manifesting His glory, what Jesus wants us to know from His first miracle." Here's the first thing that we see.

    24:25-24:32

Number one, jot this down, "Jesus cares about what you care about." Jesus cares about what you care about.

    24:33-24:37

And this miracle is really different than the other miracles in the Bible.

    24:37-24:38

    It just is.

    24:39-24:49

I mean, every other miracle that Scripture records has some huge personal benefit for a person or a group of people, like healing, right? That's a big one.

    24:50-24:53

The blind, the deaf, the lame, the bleeding, the leprous.

    24:56-24:57

    Huge personal benefit, right?

    24:57-25:03

Or driving out evil spirits, or raising the dead, or feeding the multitudes.

    25:05-25:11

I mean, those miracles really changed people's lives.

    25:11-25:13

    And here...

    25:14-25:17

I mean, was it really necessary that He do this?

    25:19-25:27

I mean, even miracles like Jesus walking on the water, I mean, at least that miracle had a visible wow factor to it because people actually saw it.

    25:29-25:32

But these people at this wedding weren't dying of thirst.

    25:33-25:40

And really, this miracle just boiled down to Jesus was sort of protecting a groom from major embarrassment.

    25:43-25:44

    And that is glorious.

    25:45-25:46

    Why?

    25:47-25:53

Because it shows that Jesus cares about what you care about.

    25:55-25:58

Sometimes we think Jesus only cares about the big things.

    26:00-26:03

Sometimes we think we should only pray about big things, right?

    26:05-26:07

Praying for my friends who are fighting cancer.

    26:09-26:12

Praying for my friends who have lost loved ones and are grieving.

    26:14-26:19

Praying for the unsaved to come to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    26:19-26:21

    Those are big things.

    26:21-26:24

And does Jesus care about that stuff? Yes, He does.

    26:24-26:26

He absolutely cares about that stuff.

    26:26-26:32

But Jesus reminded us many times that He cares about everything that we care about.

    26:35-26:36

I think sometimes we need to be reminded of that.

    26:37-26:39

Here's how Jesus said it in Matthew 10.

    26:41-26:44

Jesus said, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?

    26:46-26:51

And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your father." I love this next statement.

    26:51-27:03

And he says, "But even the hairs on your head are all numbered." Granted, it's a lot easier for God to count some people's hairs than others, because some have less.

    27:04-27:07

But the point is this, how many hairs do you have on your head?

    27:08-27:11

That's the most insignificant fact about you, right?

    27:12-27:13

Even if you knew that number, who cares?

    27:13-27:15

Are you impressing your friends with that?

    27:15-27:16

    Putting it on social media?

    27:16-27:19

Like, "Hey, guess how many hairs I have on my head?" Nobody cares. Why? Because it's not important.

    27:22-27:23

    But it's important to God.

    27:24-27:33

He loves you and knows you and cares about you that much that He knows the most insignificant fact about you.

    27:35-27:44

Jesus said, "Fear not, therefore you are of more value than many sparrows." Like, you know, God cares about a bird.

    27:44-27:45

How much more do you think He cares about you?

    27:47-27:52

Same way, Luke 11, we're not going to turn there, but just to paraphrase, Jesus was illustrating the power of prayer.

    27:52-27:57

So to illustrate the power of prayer, He told the story of a man who wanted to borrow a snack for his friend.

    27:58-28:07

And the application wasn't, "Hey, hey, hey, don't bother God with that unimportant stuff." The application was actually the opposite.

    28:07-28:12

He said, "Hey, hey, hey, shamelessly bring all your requests to God because He cares about that stuff.

    28:12-28:14

    He cares. He cares.

    28:15-28:17

He cares at work, out of wine at the wedding.

    28:17-28:21

He cares that you don't have Pop-Tarts for your buddy or whatever.

    28:22-28:23

    He cares about that stuff.

    28:25-28:27

Those little things that you're dealing with.

    28:28-28:29

See, Jesus wants you to bring those too.

    28:32-28:35

Things like, "I really like this new position at work.

    28:35-28:39

I mean, my job's good, but I was really hoping to get this new position.

    28:41-28:47

I've actually had people tell me, I feel like I don't want to bother God with that stuff.

    28:47-28:49

Really, do you think God is bothered?

    28:50-28:52

Do you think He's worn out with you talking to Him?

    28:52-28:52

    No.

    28:53-28:54

    Just bring it. Bring it.

    28:55-28:57

    My kid needs potty trained.

    28:58-28:59

    Take it to God.

    29:01-29:06

I want my garden to grow, or Lord, give me another 50,000 miles out of this car.

    29:07-29:14

Whatever, bring it, because this story about the wine tells us that if you care about it, Jesus cares about it.

    29:16-29:21

Number two, Jesus turns ordinary things into extraordinary things.

    29:24-29:25

    That's like Jesus' specialty, right?

    29:25-29:28

He takes ordinary things and makes them extraordinary.

    29:30-29:33

And how did that happen at this event?

    29:35-29:46

It really kind of started when Jesus' mother said in verse 5, "Just do whatever He tells you." In other words, listen, somebody needs to hear this today.

    29:48-29:51

In other words, Mary was saying, "Just put it in Jesus' hands.

    29:52-29:57

Just let Him deal with it." Mary didn't know what He was going to do.

    29:59-30:03

And you realize we're in that position every moment of every day in our lives.

    30:04-30:12

That we have this need, big or small, whatever it is, and we don't know what God's going to do, but the advice is the same.

    30:12-30:17

put it in His hands, because when He has something in His hands, He's going to do something awesome with it.

    30:17-30:26

I don't know what, but you can be sure, if it's in Jesus' hands, He's going to do something better than any idea that we could have come up with.

    30:27-30:27

He's going to make it better.

    30:30-30:31

So just put it in His hands.

    30:33-30:37

This is what Jesus does to everyone who comes to Him.

    30:38-30:42

You come to Jesus as a weak and hopeless sinner.

    30:42-30:43

    That's ordinary. Those are everywhere.

    30:45-30:48

And He transforms you into an eternal child of God.

    30:49-30:51

He takes ordinary and makes it extraordinary.

    30:54-31:02

With every wedding, when God brings two people together, He takes two ordinary people and He makes something extraordinary.

    31:02-31:02

    Two become one.

    31:05-31:14

When things are given over to Jesus, He transforms them in inexplicable and glorious ways.

    31:15-31:23

He took the jugs that they used to dip their hands and provided the best wine anybody ever tasted.

    31:25-31:31

The question for you, for me, what do you need to put in Jesus' hands today?

    31:33-31:37

What is it in your life that you need to hand over to Him?

    31:40-31:41

You've got to commend Mary here.

    31:43-31:47

When she was like, "Just do whatever He tells you." She could have just tried to figure it out.

    31:51-31:54

Like, "I'll go in the kitchen and I'll whip up something." Right, ladies?

    31:55-31:56

    "I'll whip up something.

    31:56-31:59

It won't be wine, but I'll figure out something.

    32:00-32:05

the wedding guests will be drinking gravy or something, but I'll figure out something.

    32:06-32:14

Or let me pull my resources and see if there's something that I'm able to do to try to..." She didn't do any of that.

    32:15-32:16

She's like, "I'm just going to...

    32:16-32:18

    I'm just going to...

    32:18-32:20

Hey, hand it over to Jesus.

    32:20-32:21

Just do whatever He tells you.

    32:21-32:26

I'm out." And I think that's advice that we all need to take.

    32:29-32:29

    Your children?

    32:31-32:32

    Hand them over to Jesus.

    32:34-32:36

This health thing that you've been dealing with?

    32:38-32:39

    Hand it over to Jesus.

    32:41-32:46

That situation at work that has been frustrating you for like the last forever months?

    32:47-32:48

    Hand it over to Jesus.

    32:50-32:54

You take ordinary things and you transform them, so I'm handing this over to you.

    32:55-32:56

I'm done trying to fix it myself.

    32:57-33:01

it is yourself that you need to hand over to Jesus to say, "I'm done trying things my way.

    33:02-33:04

I'm done trying to do things in my own power.

    33:04-33:08

I'm done trying to use my own intellect and creativity because it's not getting me anywhere.

    33:09-33:14

Jesus, it has to be You." Let's stop trying to fix things.

    33:15-33:16

Let's stop trying to figure it out.

    33:18-33:21

Hand it to Jesus. He turns ordinary things into extraordinary things.

    33:22-33:28

And finally, these are all ways that Jesus is manifesting His glory.

    33:28-33:29

He cares about what you care about.

    33:30-33:32

    He transforms ordinary into extraordinary.

    33:33-33:36

Finally, Jesus saves the best for last.

    33:38-33:46

Again, the master of the feast was astonished that the best was saved for last, and that's a principle that the Lord wants us to get nailed down.

    33:48-33:49

    Think about this.

    33:51-33:53

Did Jesus know that they were going to run out of wine?

    33:54-33:55

Do you think He knew that?

    33:56-33:57

I am 100% convinced He knew that.

    33:58-33:59

Based on what we studied last week, right?

    34:00-34:02

He knew the disciples before He even met them.

    34:02-34:03

Or they met Him, I mean.

    34:04-34:05

You know what I mean, right?

    34:05-34:05

    You know what I mean?

    34:06-34:07

    Okay, thank you.

    34:07-34:10

He knew them when they were introduced to Him.

    34:10-34:13

So do you think He knew what was going...

    34:13-34:15

Do you think He knew they were going to run out of wine?

    34:15-34:16

    He knew all of this.

    34:19-34:39

And I'm like, "Well, if he knew that, why didn't he just turn the water into wine first?" And say, "Here you go! This will save any tension or stress that you might have." And I believe he's illustrating a glorious truth.

    34:41-34:44

You've heard it said that good things come to those who wait, right?

    34:47-34:50

I think Jesus is doing this one way better.

    34:52-34:55

The best things come to those who wait on Him.

    34:57-35:03

If you think about it, you know the devil, he offers the best first. You know that?

    35:04-35:12

Actually, to be clear, the devil deceives you by offering you what looks like the best first.

    35:14-35:17

Satan dangles that in front of you to say, "Look, this looks like the best.

    35:18-35:19

    "This is the easiest.

    35:19-35:25

"This is the thing that'll benefit you now, "so you should go after it because it benefits you now." Right?

    35:25-35:27

Give in to that sexual temptation now.

    35:30-35:33

Go into debt now to get that thing that you want now.

    35:35-35:36

    Be lazy now.

    35:37-35:40

Take this drug to feel good now.

    35:42-35:46

Just do whatever you wanna do, whatever's gonna make you feel good, whatever's going to benefit you now.

    35:47-35:48

    That's how the devil works.

    35:49-35:50

    But here's the catch.

    35:52-35:55

He never shows you the path of where that's going to take you.

    35:57-36:03

The devil never explains to you how that's going to play out when you subscribe to this philosophy.

    36:04-36:06

He never shows you the end.

    36:07-36:09

He just shows you the enticing next step.

    36:11-36:14

Give in to that sexual temptation now.

    36:14-36:24

He doesn't show you the destruction that's going to come on the homes of the relationships that are destroyed by giving in now.

    36:26-36:27

He's not going to tell you that part.

    36:29-36:32

Or go into debt now to get that thing you want now.

    36:33-36:42

He's not going to show you those credit card bills that are piling up that are going to bury you and you're like, "How did I get in this financial mess?" He's not going to show you that.

    36:44-36:45

    Be lazy now.

    36:47-36:51

He's not going to show you fired from your job for being lazy.

    36:51-36:53

We had a whole sermon on that a couple months ago.

    36:54-36:55

He's not going to show you that.

    36:57-37:18

Or, "Hey, take this drug to feel good now." He's not going to show you the horrors of addiction and the suffering and the financial suffering and the loss of life and all of the garbage that comes with that. He's not gonna show you that because you're gonna feel good now, right?

    37:21-37:50

You see, Jesus does the opposite. Jesus saves the best for last and He shows you what that path looks like to get to what's last. That's why Romans 8:18 He says, "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us." What was Paul saying?

    37:53-37:55

He's saying, "I am convinced that Jesus saves the best for last.

    37:57-38:15

So this stuff that I'm dealing with in the meantime, it's all good." We just spent a whole year in Revelation, And if there's one big takeaway from that entire series, I think it's the very thing that Jesus introduced to us at this wedding.

    38:17-38:18

And that is, He saves the best for last.

    38:20-38:23

Are you willing to wait on the Lord to receive what He offers?

    38:25-38:31

Are you going to latch on to this destructive, low-hanging fruit that the devil's enticing you?

    38:34-38:36

Jesus has a way of saving the best for last.

    38:37-38:44

So you know at first glance, this whole wedding in Cana, it just seems kind of random.

    38:46-38:51

And I think if we're honest to us at first, it seems like a really weird first miracle for Jesus.

    38:53-38:54

But church, I want you to look closer.

    38:56-39:02

In manifesting His glory, Jesus says, Listen, I care about that thing that you care about.

    39:04-39:19

Jesus is saying, "Listen, I want you to know My transforming power." Jesus wants you to know the glorious hope that He promises when people wait on Him.

    39:21-39:27

So like the disciples, let's walk away from this wedding, letting it sink in.

    39:29-39:39

And like them, you'll find that you believe in Jesus, you know Jesus in a way that changes your life.

    39:40-39:41

Will you pray with me, please?

    39:43-39:48

Father in Heaven, Your wisdom is astounding.

    39:50-39:51

    Utterly astounding.

    39:53-39:59

That Your Son would choose to manifest His glory in such a profound way.

    40:02-40:07

Father, I pray simply today that this passage is an encouragement for Your people.

    40:09-40:12

For those of us who have accused You of not caring.

    40:14-40:25

For those of us who have tried to take matters into our own hands, or have been tempted to take the thing and it's going to make us feel good in the moment.

    40:28-40:30

Father, teach us what it means to wait on the Lord.

    40:32-40:42

Father, for anyone here who doesn't know You, I pray that these glorious truths will be transforming for them.

    40:44-40:48

Your Word tells us that it is Your kindness that leads to repentance.

    40:51-41:06

This passage so clearly shows us the kind of compassionate and merciful and loving, creative, thoughtful God that You are.

    41:08-41:17

Thank You for manifesting Your glory and letting us see it through Your Word.

    41:19-41:22

We praise You in Jesus' glorious name, Amen.

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Why do you think Jesus answered His mother how He did (John 2:4), but then helped her anyways?

  3. Why do you think this was chosen as Jesus’ first miracle? What does this tell you about the compassion of Jesus, and how He views “minor” things?

  4. If this was the debut miracle, why didn’t Jesus make this more of a “show”/production? Why do you think He did this so “quietly”?

The Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    00:07-00:23

In the first 18 verses of chapter 1, we saw the prologue, "Jesus has made Himself known." And in verses 19-34, we saw the preaching of John the Baptist, who told us that we need to prepare ourselves to know Him.

    00:25-00:39

Today, the title of the message is "Knowing Jesus, Making Him Known." Many years ago, when I was in Bible college, in a psychology class, I got to know the professor pretty well.

    00:40-00:50

He was taking attendance, and he was calling out people's names, and they were saying, "Here..." But when he got to my name, he just kind of glanced up and saw me, and just kept moving on.

    00:50-01:11

Well, the guy that was sitting beside me didn't know that the professor knew me, and didn't see that he looked up and saw me, all the guy beside me saw was the professor called my name, and nobody said "here." So this guy assumed that Jeff Miller wasn't in the classroom.

    01:12-01:19

So when the professor called my name, this guy leaned over to me, and he had no idea who I was.

    01:19-01:49

And he said, "Jeff Miller?" He goes, "Who is that? I heard somebody talking about him. Who is Jeff Miller?" And this guy was totally serious. And I thought, "Oh, this is going to be fun." So I said, "Oh, you don't know who Jeff Miller is?" "No, no, no. Who is that?" I said, "I'm going to tell you something about Jeff Miller. The man is the biggest jerk I've ever met in my life." And the guy was like, "Really?" And I said, "To be honest with you, I can't even stand looking at his face.

    01:49-01:51

    He just makes me sick.

    01:52-01:58

And this guy's eyes got huge." "Really?" And I said, "Well, you know what? I'm sorry.

    02:00-02:35

I shouldn't be speaking ill of someone sitting in a Bible college class." And right now you're thinking, "No, actually, Pastor Jeff, you shouldn't be lying to people sitting in a Bible college class." And you're like, "Well, did you ever tell him?" "Nah. No, I didn't." Now, in my defense, I was going to tell him, but he left the school shortly thereafter, and I never got the opportunity, but to this day I have to wonder if he left the school because of this conversation.

    02:35-02:41

I have to wonder if he thought to himself, "I don't want to go to a Bible college where they talk about other students that way.

    02:42-02:51

Well, speaking of introductions, in this passage we're looking at today, the first disciples get to know Jesus Christ.

    02:52-03:05

But here's the thing, unlike this guy that sat beside me in Bible College, Jesus Christ already perfectly knew these people who were just coming to know Him.

    03:05-03:12

So this passage has two sections, Andrew and Peter are in the first section, that's verses 35-42.

    03:13-03:18

And the second section revolves around Philip and Nathaniel, that's verses 43-51.

    03:18-03:24

Alright? So let's look at the first section. This is Andrew and Simon Peter, if you're taking notes.

    03:24-03:31

Look at verse 35. It says, "The next day again, John" - that's John the Baptist - "was standing with two of his disciples.

    03:32-03:43

And he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.

    03:44-03:45

Stop right there. Which two disciples?

    03:46-03:48

Well, one of them is Andrew, we find out in verse 40.

    03:49-03:53

The other one is probably John the Apostle who wrote this gospel.

    03:54-03:55

Why do I think it's him?

    03:56-04:04

Well, you're going to see in this exchange, there's a lot of detail and information given it had to have been somebody that was right there and saw it.

    04:04-04:06

So I think John the Apostle was the other one here.

    04:08-04:25

Verse 38, "Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, 'What are you seeking?' And they said to him, 'Rabbi,'" which means teacher, "'where are you staying?'" Now these are the first words of Jesus in John.

    04:26-04:28

You might want to underline this in your Bible.

    04:28-04:45

The first thing recorded from the mouth of our Lord in the Gospel of John is this question, "What are you seeking?" That's a profound question. Notice Jesus didn't say, "Who are you seeking?" That would have been an easy question to answer, right?

    04:45-04:47

"Who are you seeking?" And they just pointed to Jesus.

    04:48-04:52

"I'm looking for you." But that's not what Jesus asked.

    04:53-04:58

He asked, "What are you seeking?" In other words, what are you after?

    04:59-05:00

    What's your motive?

    05:01-05:02

    What a great question.

    05:03-05:08

Imagine if Jesus Christ showed up at our church, here physically, personally today.

    05:09-05:13

He walked right up to you, and I introduce you, and he already knows you.

    05:14-05:23

But he asked you, "Mike, what are you seeking?" Or he comes over to you and he says, "Ryan, what is it that you're after in church this morning?

    05:23-05:39

Why did you come to church? What is it that you are here for?" Well, these disciples in the text, they had been following John the Baptist, so on some level they had some grasp at this point of the implications that Jesus is the Messiah.

    05:39-05:53

Hence their response. They said, "Rabbi," which means "teacher." It was also a sign of great respect. But they ask, "Where are you staying?" They weren't just looking for an introduction, they were wanting to know Him.

    05:54-06:12

In other words, they were like, "Where are you staying because we are going with you?" Verse 39, "He said to them, 'Come and you will see.' So they came and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

    06:13-06:18

One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

    06:18-06:28

He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" which means Christ. Stop right there for a second.

    06:28-07:47

Here Andrew's introduced and notice he's called Simon Peter's brother. I bet he heard that all his life. "Oh yeah, Peter, your brother Peter, he was the one that spoke at Pentecost, right? And 3,000 people got saved. Oh, you're Peter's brother oh yeah yeah Peter who who spoke at the Jerusalem Council and made your turning point for the church and Acts 15 kind of stuff oh you're his brother Oh Peter who wrote first and second Peter oh you're Peter's brother I bet you Andrew heard that a lot but you have to notice that Andrew was called to be a that came up. If in all the discussion about Pentecost and the Jerusalem Council and writing books of the Bible and all of those things, if Andrew says, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, Simon, you know what? That might all be true, but Jesus called me first." Well, he went and found Simon, his brother. As soon as he met Jesus, notice he says, "We have found the Messiah," which means Christ, and I've shared with you before, Christ is not Jesus' last name. Okay? Christ is a title. Messiah is a title.

    07:47-08:37

Messiah is the Hebrew word and Christ is the Greek word. It literally means the anointed one. It's God's way of saying, "This is the one that I've been talking about throughout all of the scriptures." That's what the Christ means, the Messiah, the anointed one of God. Notice he, Andrew tells Simon that they found this Messiah, but look at verse 42, it says he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, "So you are Simon the son of John? You shall be called Cephas," which means Peter. Notice Andrew brought Simon to Jesus, but Jesus again already knew who Simon was, but also note this, Jesus also knew what Simon would become.

    08:38-09:33

Again, a couple translations of words here. Cephas is the Aramaic word, Peter is the Greek word, and both words mean rock. And Jesus says, "Oh, you're Simon now, but eventually you're going to be the rock." What's that all about? Well, Matthew chapter 16 this is a whole nother sermon just gonna give you the background here quickly in Matthew 16 Peter made the great confession when Jesus said who do people say that I am Peter said I believe that you're the Christ you're the Son of the Living God and in response to Peter's confession Jesus replied on this rock I will build my church again there's a whole lot to talk about here but here's the short version the church is built on the foundation of people who, like Peter, confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

    09:34-09:42

Something that we see in this passage very clearly is that Jesus takes you as you are, and He changes you into what He wants you to be.

    09:43-09:44

    Isn't that great news?

    09:45-09:48

Isn't that great news that Jesus doesn't say, "Get your act together.

    09:49-10:02

Someday if you're great enough, if you're good enough, if you're worthy enough, you can be a follower of mine." Jesus takes you exactly as you are, and He knows exactly what He's going to make you to be.

    10:02-10:05

Moving on, that's the first exchange. Now let's look at the second.

    10:05-10:08

This is with Philip and Nathaniel. Pick up in verse 43.

    10:09-10:12

It says, "The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee.

    10:12-10:22

He found Philip and said to him, 'Follow me.' Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter." Now there's not much detail given here.

    10:22-10:43

reading this passage you can have a whole lot of questions but there's one very key important detail that is given. Note this, in verse 43 it says that Jesus found Philip. You see that in the text? It's not vice versa. It wasn't that Philip was looking for Jesus. It says very clearly that Jesus found Philip. Why?

    10:44-10:51

Well I think it tells us right here in the text. Look at the first sentence in verse It says the next day, Jesus decided to go.

    10:52-11:01

So putting it all together as the Bible presents itself, apparently it says that Jesus wanted to go to Galilee in order to find Philip.

    11:02-11:03

That just speaks to his sovereignty.

    11:03-11:04

    Jesus had a plan here.

    11:05-11:07

Look at verse 45 and 46.

    11:08-11:33

"Philip found Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found him of whom Moses and the law, And also the prophets wrote, "Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Nathaniel said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see." Nathaniel is also known as Bartholomew in the other Gospels.

    11:34-11:50

And Philip says, "Nathaniel, we found him! The one that Moses and the prophets promised would come!" talking about Genesis 3.15, Deuteronomy 18.15, Isaiah 53, Daniel 7, all through the Psalms, God promised that His Messiah was going to come.

    11:51-12:05

Philip says, "Nathaniel, this is the one that God was talking about." Now you have to understand, this was a pretty dramatic lead-in, because what followed probably sounded lame in the moment to Nathaniel.

    12:05-12:10

He's like, "We found the one that the Scriptures talk about!

    12:10-12:24

Jesus of Nazareth, Son of Joseph! Now when we hear that, we have lofty, exalted thoughts." Rightly so, because we're a little more familiar with this concept that Jesus Christ, the Son of Joseph, is the Messiah.

    12:25-12:30

But you have to try to hear this the way that Nathaniel would have heard it, because he didn't have all this information yet.

    12:30-12:37

When Nathaniel heard this, it was an awfully big build-up and probably a very lame-sounding payoff.

    12:38-12:39

What do I mean by that?

    12:39-12:45

Well, Philip says, "It's Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph." Joseph was a nobody.

    12:46-12:49

And I mean that purely in human, earthly terms.

    12:50-12:52

What I mean is Joseph wasn't famous.

    12:53-12:55

And the other thing is Nazareth was a hated town.

    12:56-13:23

It just had a bad reputation and people in general Hated the town of Nazareth. So to try to put it in a modern context It would be like if I came to you and I said hey You're not gonna believe this but I found this man who is going to change the world This man is going to forever transform your life And this man is forever going to transform the lives of every single person he ever encounters and you're like who is it?

    13:23-13:37

And I say, "It's Hank Cunningham from Cleveland!" And you would rightly ask, "Can anything good come from Cleveland?" You kind of get this exchange here between Philip and Nathaniel.

    13:38-13:57

But Philip's like, "Hey, come and see. We'll talk about that more in a second." Look at verse 47, "Jesus saw Nathaniel coming toward him and said of him, 'Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit.'" This is actually a very clever play on words, Jesus' statement to Nathanael.

    13:58-14:03

You see, back in Genesis 32, Jacob was renamed Israel.

    14:04-14:08

And Israel eventually became the name of the Jewish nation, right?

    14:09-14:24

But the name Jacob, the former name, literally means "deceiver." So Jesus was saying, "An Israelite without deceit." In other words, Jesus was saying to Nathaniel, "You are all Israel and no Jacob.

    14:25-14:35

There's nothing phony about you. There's nothing fake about you." In verse 48, "Nathaniel said to him, 'How do you know me?'" That would have been my question too.

    14:36-14:50

"Jesus answered him, 'Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.'" Jesus said, "I saw you when you were under the fig tree." Like, what's the significance of the fig tree? What does that mean?

    14:50-14:57

I don't know. I did a lot of reading last week, read from a lot of scholars and commentators and famous preachers.

    14:58-15:04

Some people say, "Well, you know, Nathaniel was under the fig tree praying for the Messiah to come.

    15:04-15:05

He was under the fig tree meditating on Scripture.

    15:06-15:15

He was under the fig tree, you know, this, that, or the other." And we don't know, but whatever was happening under the fig tree, Philip knew what that was.

    15:16-15:17

You see, and all of a sudden the lights went on.

    15:18-15:21

    Philip instantly made that connection.

    15:21-15:28

When Jesus mentioned the fig tree, like, "Oh, he knows. He knows something." And we know he's convinced.

    15:28-15:32

Look at verse 49, "Nathanael answered him, 'Rabbi, you are the Son of God.

    15:32-15:35

You are the King of Israel.'" Well, I'm convinced.

    15:36-15:42

Verse 50, Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe?

    15:43-16:05

You will see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." Jesus said, "If you're convinced because I knew what was happening with you and the fig tree, you're going to see even greater things.

    16:05-16:11

You're gonna see heaven open, you're gonna see angels, they're gonna be ascending and descending, and like, what's that all about?

    16:11-16:14

Well, that's another call back to Jacob.

    16:15-16:22

Back in Genesis 28, Jacob saw a vision and a dream of a ladder or a staircase, and there were angels going up and down.

    16:23-16:29

And God said to Jacob, "I am with you, and I will keep you.

    16:30-16:38

"I will fulfill my promises to you." And Jacob awoke from that dream, and he said, "Surely the Lord is in this place." And I did not know it.

    16:39-16:45

I think Jesus was doing a callback to that story by the statement that he made in verse 51.

    16:46-16:50

In essence, I believe Jesus was saying, "Nathanael, you're going to see my ministry.

    16:52-16:53

"You're going to watch what happens.

    16:54-17:25

"You're going to hear what I say." And then, in three years, when the dust settles, and the crowds disperse, and I've been taken off the cross, and I've raised from the dead, and the tomb is empty, and I appear before you, resurrected, Nathaniel, like Jacob, you're going to say, "Surely the Lord is in this place." And I did not know it.

    17:25-17:32

So, in this account, we see the first disciples coming to know Jesus to discover that He already knew them.

    17:33-17:51

You know, as kids we sang, "Jesus loves me, this I know," but we can also rightly sing, "Jesus knows me, this I love." Because there's something else very obvious in this passage, aside from the knowledge that Jesus had of these people.

    17:52-18:02

Something you have to note in this passage, everyone in this chapter comes to know Jesus Christ because of someone else.

    18:02-18:09

John the Baptist tells Andrew, who tells Peter, and Jesus himself calls Phil, who tells Nathaniel.

    18:10-18:18

And you have to see the first thing that these disciples did as all disciples of Jesus are called to do is to make him known.

    18:19-18:25

So as we wrap up, the question we're going to answer is this, how do I make Jesus known?

    18:26-18:28

I want you to jot these three things down.

    18:28-18:29

How do I make Jesus known?

    18:29-18:33

Number one, I make Jesus known through exaltation.

    18:34-18:36

I make Jesus known through exaltation.

    18:36-18:37

What do you mean by that?

    18:37-18:42

Well, Andrew spent time with Jesus, and that's what motivated him to go get his brother.

    18:43-18:48

Philip spent time with Jesus, and that's what motivated him to go find Nathaniel.

    18:48-18:53

And in both of these cases, you see nothing mechanical or forced or canned.

    18:53-18:58

It was purely a reaction to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.

    18:59-19:05

The degree that you are following Jesus Christ is the degree that you are witnessing for Jesus Christ.

    19:06-19:12

There are so many classes and seminars and books on evangelism.

    19:13-19:14

    Remember evangelism explosion?

    19:15-19:17

How many people remember evangelism explosion?

    19:18-19:30

You have your little survey, and I'm taking a survey about religion, and I'd just like to ask you a few questions, and that's sort of how we approach the subject and get people the gospel, and you remember that?

    19:31-20:08

I personally have taught many classes and led seminars, and here's the thing with all of these evangelism teaching tools, they really only benefit the people who want to witness. If you go into that, witnessing isn't really your thing. Witnessing probably isn't going to be your thing when you leave. But, by far, the best way to be the best witness for Jesus Christ is to be walking with Christ yourself. That makes you the best evangelist.

    20:08-21:08

I saw a video years ago, I think it was a Ray Comfort sharing the gospel on the street kind of thing, but they called this guy over and said, "Hey, would you be willing to give this gospel track to a stranger?" And the guy's like, "No, I don't really feel comfortable, you know, giving gospel tracks to strangers. I don't really feel comfortable doing that." And they said, "Well, what if I gave you $20? Would you do it for $20?" And they held the cash up. He goes, "Yeah, I'll do it for $20." So he grabs the track and runs over to the first girl he sees walking by. He goes, "Hey, I have this little book. I'd like you to check it out, read it, and just a little something for you and hey here you go have a nice day and he comes back and collects his $20. Well the host of this little street level experiment said to the man, they said you know Jesus said you love God or you love money. How does it make you feel knowing that you wouldn't do it because you wouldn't share the gospel because Jesus told you to but you were willing to do it for money?

    21:09-22:05

wah-wah, right? That might make you feel like a jerk, but will that really motivate you to reach out to someone with the gospel? I'll tell you what's going to make someone want to reach out to others with the gospel. You let that guy be crushed by the weight of his sin and let him experience a harsh reality of life, a place of desperation where he cries out to God and experiences grace and love and the transforming power of Jesus and the beautiful presence of the Holy Spirit and the peace and assurance he gives of forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. That guy is going to go tell people about Jesus, because he He doesn't need any other motivation other than just knowing Jesus.

    22:06-22:12

Because when you know Jesus, that's more than enough motivation to be a witness for Christ.

    22:14-22:18

The degree that you are following Christ is the degree that you are witnessing for Christ.

    22:19-22:21

So number one, I make Jesus known through exaltation.

    22:21-22:23

Number two, I make Jesus known through proclamation.

    22:25-22:35

proclamation. Sometimes as Christians we throw around lame phrases that have no biblical basis but they like sound nice to us, you know what I'm talking about?

    22:35-22:40

You know what I mean? Here's one. I've heard people say this so many times.

    22:41-23:22

"Share the gospel, use words if necessary." You ever heard somebody say that? "Share the gospel and use words if necessary." What? Where is that written? I got one for you! "Share the gospel and use words!" I mean, what is this, lifestyle charades that we're trying to get people to guess? Like, "All right, I'm gonna do the motions, and you're gonna guess, okay, all right, all right, I'm gonna try to guess, I'm gonna try to guess, okay, okay, I'm gonna try to guess, okay care about me and I can't figure out what it is you're trying...

    23:23-23:33

I'm sorry, I give up. What was the answer?" And you're like, "Jesus Christ loves you and died for your sins, that was the answer!" Lifestyle Shreds doesn't do it.

    23:34-23:51

Listen, yes, yes, love people, yes, let your light shine before others, yes, yes, absolutely, but faith comes by hearing the Word of Christ, Romans 10:17. "If If someone is going to come to faith, it has to be by hearing.

    23:52-24:00

And Andrew and Philip, both in this passage, simply shared what they knew about Jesus.

    24:01-24:11

One of the hang-ups people have about witnessing, people say, "Well, what if they ask me a question I don't know?" Well, Andrew and Philip taught us that we don't need to have all the answers.

    24:12-24:12

    Think about it.

    24:13-24:45

one sense, Andrew and Philip knew very little about Jesus Christ, because this was only the beginning of Jesus' ministry. How many miracles have Andrew and Philip seen at this point? The answer is none. No miracles. They didn't see the cross, they didn't see the empty tomb, yet. They didn't see any of that. They didn't see the resurrected Christ, yet. They knew very little, but they knew enough. And was compelling and worth sharing.

    24:46-24:47

    So share what you know.

    24:48-24:52

If you know Jesus, you know enough to share with someone else.

    24:53-24:58

And you'll find that when you get the opportunity to talk about Jesus, you know more than you think you do.

    24:59-25:04

So make Jesus known through exaltation, your personal walk, it has to start there.

    25:05-25:07

    Make Jesus known through proclamation.

    25:07-25:10

Finally, I make Jesus known through invitation.

    25:11-25:13

Very clearly seen in the text.

    25:14-25:15

    Invitation.

    25:16-25:22

Another obstacle we face in witnessing that discourages some people from witnessing is dealing with skeptics.

    25:23-25:26

And I love how Philip handled the skepticism.

    25:26-25:27

    I love that.

    25:28-25:40

Remember, Nathaniel said, "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" Nathaniel was already sold on the fact that Jesus couldn't be the Messiah because there's no way anything good came from Nazareth.

    25:40-25:41

    So he was a skeptic.

    25:42-25:47

But notice that Philip didn't launch into some sermon or some apologetics course.

    25:47-25:48

Do you see that verse 46?

    25:49-25:55

Philip just simply said this, "Come and see, come and see." What if that's how we handled skepticism?

    25:56-26:04

If people were like, "Oh, Christians are all hypocrites." And we're like, "Hey, hey, come and see." Like, "Oh, all the churches do is ask for money.

    26:04-26:07

Come and see." I don't think Christianity really works.

    26:08-26:09

    Come and see.

    26:10-26:27

And I thought as I was preparing this, if only there was a place where people could be invited, where they could see transformed lives, where they would be loved, where they could experience God's presence and God's people, where they could come to know Jesus Christ personally.

    26:27-26:33

If only there was a place you could invite someone where they would see and experience all of that.

    26:33-26:35

Oh, if only there was a place.

    26:36-26:39

there is a place, and you're sitting in it.

    26:40-26:47

That's why, church, I have no problem inviting people to Harvest Bible Chapel, because I know what is in store for them when they come.

    26:48-26:52

They're going to be welcomed and loved by the best people on earth.

    26:53-26:58

They're going to come to know Jesus Christ, your passionate worship, and the proclamation of the Word of God.

    26:59-27:02

I know what happens here, so I want them to come.

    27:03-27:06

Inviting people to church is the easiest thing.

    27:06-27:09

Take one of these little yellow cards that we provide on the back table.

    27:09-27:14

It says, "I'm inviting you," on one side, and the other side has information about our church.

    27:15-27:25

And you just say to someone, "Hey, if you don't have a church home, "I would love for you to be my guest "at Harvest Bible Chapel," and give them the card.

    27:26-27:28

What is the absolute worst thing that could happen?

    27:29-27:34

The person says, "I don't want to come to your stupid church." That's okay.

    27:34-27:43

If somebody says something like that or reacts in that way, all you need to do is smile and say, "It's a standing invitation.

    27:44-27:48

If you decide to change your mind sometime, I'd love to have you come." That's it.

    27:50-27:58

Philip says to Nathaniel, "Come and see." Andrew, same with Simon Peter, "Come and see." He brought Simon to Jesus.

    27:59-28:02

He just grabbed him and he was like, "You have to meet him!

    28:02-28:08

Come and see. Come and see." And Andrew is a great inspiration to all of us in witnessing.

    28:09-28:10

I mean, think about Andrew for a second.

    28:12-28:19

You remember how God used Peter to save 3,000 of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2?

    28:20-28:28

Well, Peter wouldn't have been there and he wouldn't have given that sermon If his brother Andrew didn't introduce him to Jesus first.

    28:29-28:31

So hey, maybe you aren't the next Simon Peter.

    28:33-28:34

But maybe you are the next Andrew.

    28:35-28:39

Maybe God is going to use you to reach the next Simon Peter.

    28:40-28:41

    Like where would that happen?

    28:42-28:45

Well, maybe it's one of your children you're discipling in your home.

    28:46-28:49

Maybe it's one of the children you're discipling in Harvest Kids.

    28:50-28:51

Maybe it's in your small group.

    28:51-28:52

    Maybe it's in your workplace.

    28:52-28:53

    Maybe it's in your neighborhood.

    28:54-29:03

Who knows how God is going to make an impact for eternity, not only through you, but maybe someone He reaches through you.

    29:04-29:19

Your job is simply to make Him known, to exalt Jesus Christ, proclaim His name, and invite people to come and experience His power with His people.

    29:19-29:20

    Let's pray.

    29:21-29:23

Father in heaven, we come before you today.

    29:23-29:28

We thank you for the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    29:28-29:35

And Father, it is my prayer simply today for this church, and for those who are going to be listening to this online later.

    29:37-29:50

It's my prayer, Father, that you would so consume us with your love and mercy and the power of the gospel and the relationship that you've provided through Jesus Christ.

    29:50-30:10

I pray, Father, that you would so consume us with that, that reaching out with the gospel, whether it's sharing the good news or inviting people to church or whatever, I just pray, Father, that is such a natural thing for us, because it's an outpouring of what you're already pouring into us.

    30:11-30:18

Father, bring us to a place of just genuine enthusiasm for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    30:19-30:25

Father, we thank you that you've chosen to use people to carry out the work of the Great Commission.

    30:25-30:31

And Father, find us faithful in being ambassadors for Christ, as your word has called us.

    30:31-30:33

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.
