    It might be quicker for me to list some of the areas of ministry where he hasn't stepped in, but especially in the prayer team ministry and with missions.

    Mike has been such a great servant of the Lord and a great mentor to a lot of people in this church.

    and Brian, you know how sometimes, when you meet somebody, you know how sometimes it takes you a while to get to know them before you like them?

    That was not the case with you.

    People say that every week when I get up to preach.

    Kidding aside, you and Shirley have demonstrated such a spiritual maturity and wisdom that was obvious from the very beginning.

    And I know what a huge impact the two of you had on our marriage class that we had this summer.

    And here at Harvest Bible Chapel, elders are not so much selected are identified.

    Because Scripture gives the criteria of the type of man that should shepherd the church.

    And I'm going to ask you men, if you would please, I have a few words for the elders, but I'm going to ask you to sit in the front row for two reasons.

    One is nobody ever is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And the other reason is I want to share a few words about what it means to be an elder, and it'd just be a lot easier if I didn't have to do this the whole time.

    And then we're going to call you back up But 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 give the qualifications for an elder.

    So again, they're more identified than selected.

    So, what we had done, especially this past year in our eldership as I sat down with Darren and Jay and Rich, we said, who are the men in our church demonstrate the qualities of an elder. And there were two men that immediately went to the top of that list that we started praying about, and they went through a long process, Brian and Mike did as the others did, but they went through a long process of applications and interviews and training and attending elders meetings to see what goes on. So you have to know that this isn't something that we were just like eeny meeny miny moe, hey I like you, you're good looking, you look good in a suit, you're an elder.

    This has been a very long process of really seeking the Lord and getting to see the character of these men.

    And I'm really excited for this church to have this caliber of leadership.

    But just a word for the elders here before we pray.

    This comes from 1 Peter 5.

    Pastor Jeff:

    I just want to give you the elders' job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And again, this isn't going to be a surprise to any of these guys.

    Pastor Jeff:

    We've been talking about these things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    But this is the elders' job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    I want to read these verses and then very quickly just sort of list some of the things that the Bible calls an elder of the church to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:47-06:03

    And Peter writes, "So I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory is going to be revealed, shepherd the flock of God that is among you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    Exercising oversight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:05-06:07

    Stop right there. That's number one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:07-06:09

    First part of your job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:10-06:11

    Exercise oversight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:11-06:14

    Or, we would say an elder shepherds God's people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:15-06:16

    Okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:17-06:30

    You aren't being installed as dictators, as bosses, as some kind of CEO of the church I'm just going to keep people in line." You're a shepherd.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:33-06:36

    That's what it means to exercise oversight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:38-06:42

    And he gives the attitude as we read on in verse 2.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:42-06:59

    He says, "Not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you, not for shameful gain, but eagerly." And that takes us to number two in my description, an elder not only shepherds God's people, but an elder has godly motives.

    An elder has godly motives.

    And he gives two positives and two negatives here.

    Did you see that?

    Here's a negative.

    Not under compulsion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    It wasn't like we're twisting these guys' arms like, "Brian, come on, man.

    Pastor Jeff:

    I need you to do it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:17-07:18

    If you don't do it, the church fails.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:18-07:21

    If you don't do it, Jesus is disappointed in you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:21-07:24

    Okay, I'll do it." it can't be under compulsion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:25-07:29

    It can't be guilt trip or some obligation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:29-07:30

    It can't be that way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:30-07:35

    He says, "Not under compulsion, but willingly." Like, yes, this is something that I want to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:38-07:40

    He says, "As God would have you." And here's the second negative.

    Pastor Jeff:

    He says, "Not for shameful gain." Yeah, you're not getting paid.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:46-07:47

    So that's not a motive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    But there's other gains that can be made through leadership, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    That's what Peter's talking about here.

    He says you're not put in a position of leadership to take advantage of those under your care.

    Pastor Jeff:

    He says but eagerly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    Eagerly!

    Pastor Jeff:

    Not just willingly, but eagerly!

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:06-08:20

    Not just, "I want to do this, but I really love and want to help lead this people!" The third part of the job description takes us to verse 3.

    He says, "Not domineering over those in your charge." An elder is gracious.

    Pastor Jeff:

    Not domineering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:30-08:34

    Not that Gentile style that Jesus was talking about, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:34-08:44

    Jesus said, "The rulers of the Gentiles, they lorded over them, but not so with you." Jesus said, "The greatest among you must be" what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:45-08:48

    "A servant." An elder is gracious.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:49-08:54

    Yes, this is the highest level of authority in the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:54-08:56

    So according to Jesus, do you know what that means?

    Pastor Jeff:

    The highest level of authority is also the highest level of servanthood, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:02-09:06

    Yes, you are men of authority because you're men under authority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:07-09:11

    And authority doesn't mean I'm the boss, you do what I say.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:12-09:17

    Authority means God has called me to make decisions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:18-09:25

    to bless and protect those that He has entrusted to me." That's authority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:26-09:28

    That's authority in the home - men.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:28-09:31

    That's the authority in the church - elders.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:33-09:40

    Verse 3, he goes on, he says, "But being examples to the flock." That's the fourth part of your job description.

    Pastor Jeff:

    An elder is a model.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:42-09:44

    An elder is a model.

    Pastor Jeff:

    Mike, when I told Mike that, he goes, "Yeah, I know that that's why you picked me, because of my good looks. I'm a model, right? I do my little turn on the catwalk." And no, that's not what we mean by model. It means you're an example.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:01-10:17

    He says, "Be an example to the flock." Meaning, people should be looking to you as an elder to say, "This is what it looks like to follow Christ." Remember the Apostle Paul said, "Be imitators of me as I imitate Christ." That's your job. People should be looking to you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    You know, what does it look like to follow Jesus?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:19-10:25

    These people who have recently come to Christ in our church, they're like, "Hey, I'm a baby Christian.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:25-10:28

    What does it look like as a husband, as a father?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:28-10:31

    What does it look like as a new believer?" They should be looking to you guys.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:32-10:37

    Saying, "Okay, that's a model of what it means." Not perfect. None of us are perfect.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:38-10:50

    But striving and pursuing and seeking Christ and worshiping Christ, walking with Christ, working for Christ, making worship a priority, making small group involvement a priority, making home a priority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:52-10:53

    An elder is a model.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:54-10:58

    And then finally, an elder works for his shepherd.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:59-11:15

    That's where Peter says, "And when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory." You are working for Jesus with an eye on eternity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:17-11:18

    That yes, you are shepherds.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:18-11:19

    We are shepherds.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:20-11:22

    But we are shepherds under the Good Shepherd, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:23-11:28

    So, it is Him whom we seek to please with the way that we shepherd this flock.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:29-11:32

    So I'm going to ask if you would come back up here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:33-11:35

    And let's put Brian and Mike in the front.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:38-11:40

    and the rest of us behind, and we're going to lay hands.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:41-11:43

    And church, we want you to pray along with us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And we want you to do something that we actually did in Thailand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    In Thailand, when Barnabas, our missionary, would say, "Let's pray," everybody prayed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And you know that's not a problem for God, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    You realize at any time, at any moment, in the world, there are how many millions of people lifting up their voices to the Lord at the same time?

    Pastor Jeff:

    He has no problem sorting that out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And what a sign of unity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:09-12:13

    What a sign of seeking the Lord together that we would pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    So I'm going to ask if we would pray and just lift these men up before the Lord and really all of our eldership and ask the Lord that we would honor Him with the way that we shepherd this church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And then after a few moments of us all praying at the same time, I asked Rich if he would close us for the congregational prayer over the elders.

    So will you pray with me, church?

    Father in Heaven, we just lift these men up to You.

    Pastor Jeff:

    And we thank You so much for the leadership that You have provided this church.

    Father, we need Your wisdom and guidance.

    12:54-12:58

    And I thank You for the way that You have raised and prepared these men.

    I thank You, Father, for their wives.

    We thank You, Father, for their families.

    We thank You, Father, for them coming into this knowing the commitment.

    Father, we ask that they would shepherd with a pure motive.

    We ask, Father, that they would shepherd with a servant's heart.

    That they would shepherd this church in the way that Christ has called.

    Father, give us wisdom.

    Guide us.

    Our most gracious and loving Father, We thank you so very much for Mike and Brian.

    Thank you for sending them our way to be ministers, to be stewards, and to be elders.

    I pray, Father, You would continue to give them wisdom and discernment.

    Give them compassionate and loving hearts that these qualities would abound in them more and more.

    And that You would continue to make them Your faithful servants as they serve and steward the good deposit that You have given them.

    We pray that You would continue to bless our congregation.

    And they are going to stand on either side of the middle aisles as the worship team leads the song.

    And here's what you're going to do.

    You're going to stand and worship.

    And you're going to come up and receive the Lord's Supper when you're ready.

    John 1, we're in a series called "Knowing Jesus." And the Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    And last week we were in verses 1-18, which is really the prologue.

    And we discovered last week that the only way that we can know Jesus Christ is He has to make Himself known.

    And what did we find out about Jesus?

    Well, we found out that Jesus is God.

    He came to give life.

    And He's full of grace and truth.

    A few years ago, it was a Saturday morning.

    It was a very cold, wintry Saturday morning.

    And my wife said, "Hey, I need you to run to the bank." And I can't remember what business I needed to take care of at the bank.

    And you're going to find out here in a second why I forgot what the business was at the bank.

    But Erin said, "You know, you can just run through the drive-thru." Now again, this was a Saturday morning, the bank closed at 12, had to hurry up and get there before it closed.

    Okay, it's Saturday morning, I don't know how it is at your house, but I was like bumming out, right?

    But she's like, "Go to the bank." And when she said, "You can go to the drive-thru," do you know what I heard?

    Like oh, I only need to get dressed from the waist up then, right?

    I'm in my car and they're only going to see like the north part of me, so I can just be dressed like up top.

    And that's what I did.

    On the bottom, I was wearing a pair of old gym shorts, and of course my pasty white wintry legs that looks like they've never seen the sun.

    And I had on this pair of winter boots.

    Okay, the pair that I had looked like they were on the final stages of leprosy and that somebody put them on fire and the fire was put out by a pack of rabid wolverines.

    They were ratty, dirty, tattered, disgusting.

    Okay, I hear you, some of you guys are laughing.

    You don't keep a pair of shoes like that by the door to take the dog out or, you know what I'm talking about, right, they're just the shoes that you just kinda slip on.

    Well, mine just so happened to be like those kind.

    But like I said, they were an abomination.

    But I'm like, but I'm going to the drive-thru, right?

    So, nobody's going to see this, only this, and I'm going to look great.

    And I went to the bank drive-through.

    And again, I can't remember what the business was that needed to be conducted.

    But I remember at the drive-through, the teller said, yeah, we're having some sort of a problem.

    Can you come inside?

    I said, yes, I can come inside, because whatever needed to happen, needed to happen right then.

    I didn't have time to run home and finish getting dressed.

    Plus, that would have been an awkward conversation with the teller, right?

    Can you come inside?

    Yeah, I can come inside in about a half hour.

    I gotta run home and finish getting dressed.

    No, that's not the conversation you wanna have.

    So I'm like, you know what, sometimes you just gotta take it like a man.

    So I went inside and was at the counter and the teller says, okay, I see here that she looked over the counter and she said, Why are you wearing that?

    This is a true story.

    And I smiled and I said, well, I didn't think anybody was going to see me.

    Well whatever the issue was, she couldn't get it figured out so she had to call over like some manager and the manager comes over and she goes, oh yeah, I see the problem here.

    And the manager looks over the counter, and she goes, "What's up with them boots?" And I said, "I didn't think anyone was going to see me." So they're taking care of the banking business, and I'm standing there almost totally humiliated.

    And here's where it went into totally humiliated.

    I'm just kind of standing there.

    I turn around and standing behind me is my high school English teacher, Mrs. Lucy Dollar.

    And I said, "Mrs. Dollar!" Remember Mrs. Dollar, Chris?

    I said, "Mrs. Dollar!" And she goes, "Jeff Miller!" She says, "Why are you dressed like that?" But I said, "Because I didn't think anybody was going to see me!" I wasn't ready to meet people that day.

    And here's the point of that story.

    When it comes to knowing Jesus, that's part of the problem for us.

    It's not that He's not ready to meet us.

    07:06-07:10

    Our problem is we're sometimes not ready to meet Him.

    We sort of show up to church half-dressed, hoping that we don't meet Him.

    Well, God sent someone to not only introduce Jesus, but to tell us - this is it, this is the sermon today, church.

    God sent someone to tell us how to prepare to meet Him.

    07:38-07:41

    And that man's name, we call him John the Baptist.

    He was the last Old Testament prophet.

    07:45-07:47

    He was the first New Testament preacher.

    07:48-07:51

    He was the most popular preacher of his day until Jesus.

    07:55-07:58

    And he received the greatest compliment any person had ever received.

    Matthew 11.11.

    Jesus said among men born of women, no one has risen greater than John the Baptist.

    And honestly, I think John the Baptist is one of the most interesting men who ever walked the planet.

    And you can read all about him in the Gospels, especially Luke 1, Luke 3, and we're not going there today.

    Because John the Apostle who wrote this, he's not really interested in John the Baptist's biography.

    He's only interested in his message.

    So we're just going where the text goes here We're going to see that John the Baptist's message was to announce the coming of the Messiah, and here it is.

    He's going to call people to prepare to know Him.

    Don't show up half-dressed.

    Prepare yourself to know Jesus.

    08:55-08:59

    So if you're taking notes on your outline, you're going to see this in the text.

    Here's how to prepare to know Jesus.

    And number one is this.

    Your heart must be ready.

    Look at verse 19.

    It says, "And this is the testimony of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?'" You're like, "Who are these Jews that sent these priests and Levites?" Well, he tells us - jump down to verse 24.

    He says, "Now they had been sent from the Pharisees." You're going to see that throughout the Gospel of John when he references the Jews something like 70 times in the Gospel of John.

    It's always referring to these elite religious people who wouldn't believe in Jesus and actually hated Jesus.

    And here we get their debut in the Gospel of John.

    Verse 20.

    09:52-09:58

    Okay, so they're like, "Who are you?" Verse 20 says, "He confessed." This is John the Baptist.

    "He confessed and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ.

    10:04-10:06

    Like what does that mean, confessed and not confessed?

    10:06-10:07

    What does that mean?

    10:07-10:14

    Well, this was actually a Jewish figure of speech in the day, and it was used for emphasis.

    Giving a positive, and then giving a negative, and then doubling down with the positive again.

    10:23-10:26

    And I'm not going to give you a whole grammar lesson, but here's the tail end of this.

    Here's what this means.

    10:28-10:35

    The structure, the way this is written, indicates that John the Baptist was repeatedly asked this by so many people.

    "Hey, are you the Christ? Are you the Christ?

    10:37-10:40

    Are you the Christ?" And he was repeatedly...

    10:40-10:43

    So he repeatedly had to keep denying that.

    10:43-10:44

    "No, I am not the Christ. I am not the Christ.

    10:45-10:46

    I am not the Christ. I am not the Christ.

    10:46-10:51

    I am not the Christ." And that's what this is saying.

    10:52-11:02

    Repeatedly asked, repeatedly answered, "I am not the Christ." and they asked him, "What then, are you Elijah?" Why did they ask that?

    Well, in the Old Testament, in the book of Malachi, Elijah was associated with the coming of the Christ.

    The Bible says that John the Baptist came in the power and spirit of Elijah, but John the Baptist was not literally Elijah.

    He wasn't like the reincarnation of Elijah or anything like that, just in the power and spirit of Elijah.

    So they said, "What then, are you Elijah?" And he said, "I am not." Then they asked, "Are you the prophet?" And he answered, "No." What do they mean by the prophet?

    Well, Deuteronomy 18.15, Moses told Israel, "The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers.

    11:45-11:55

    It is to him you shall listen." And Jewish history always associated that prophecy from Moses as being the Christ, The "the" prophet is coming.

    And they're like, "Oh, you must be the guy that Moses was talking about right back in Deuteronomy." And John the Baptist is like, "Nope, I'm not him either." Look at v. 22, "So they asked him, 'Who are you?

    We need to give an answer to those who sinned us.

    12:14-12:20

    What do you say about yourself?'" They're like, look, John the Baptist was so popular.

    12:21-12:23

    He was so popular.

    12:23-12:25

    They knew he had to be something.

    12:26-12:37

    They're like, you don't have this wild, bug-eating, fur-wearing preacher out in the middle of the wilderness with thousands of people coming to get baptized.

    12:38-12:41

    And you don't have a guy like - you've got to be something, man.

    12:41-12:42

    You've got to be something.

    12:43-12:43

    So who are you?

    12:44-12:46

    They're going to be asking us, and we've got to tell them, who are you?

    12:48-12:50

    John the Baptist gives them the answer.

    12:50-13:02

    He said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord!'" As the prophet Isaiah said.

    13:04-13:06

    So John says, "You know who I am?

    13:06-13:06

    I'll tell you who I am.

    13:06-13:11

    I'm the voice." And that's a reference to Isaiah 40.

    In verse 3, it says, "A voice cries in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord.

    13:17-13:30

    Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.' Isaiah tells us before the Messiah comes, He will be preceded by a voice in the wilderness that says, "Hey, hey, hey!

    Clear a path for the Lord!

    13:33-13:40

    Clear a path for the Messiah!" Now yes, John the Baptist was in a literal wilderness.

    13:41-13:44

    But this statement obviously has a spiritual meaning.

    13:46-13:52

    He says, "Prepare the way of the Lord." John the Baptist didn't work for Pendot.

    13:53-14:05

    He was like, "We're going to make straight the paths, we're going to fill in the potholes, we're going to get the obstacles out." And you're like, "I know, Pastor Jeff, because Pendot doesn't do that." This obviously has a spiritual meaning, right?

    14:06-14:07

    Because you need to prepare yourself.

    14:09-14:11

    The Lord's coming and you need to get ready for that.

    14:13-14:22

    In other words, he's saying, You need to create a highway in your heart for the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

    14:23-14:30

    You have to be ready - hear this - you have to be ready to know Christ.

    14:32-14:42

    I am not saying that once you get your act together, then you can know Jesus.

    14:43-14:47

    Because if that was the case, no one would ever come to Christ.

    14:48-14:48

    Amen?

    See, this is about your heart.

    14:54-14:57

    Is your heart ready to know Christ?

    14:57-15:04

    Or, this is the picture, are there obstacles in your heart?

    15:04-15:05

    That's the picture here.

    15:05-15:18

    It's like there's this highway to your heart and Christ wants to come into your heart, but there's boulders and garbage and things that need cleared out of the way that's blocking him from coming.

    Are there obstacles in your heart?

    15:25-15:26

    What do you mean by that? Let me give you a couple examples.

    15:27-15:38

    One, the very first church I pastored, Clear Creek Community Church in Ohio, I was, um, that's a long story, but I didn't apply to be the pastor of that church.

    15:38-15:40

    I ended up as the pastor of that church.

    15:40-15:41

    That's a whole other story.

    15:42-15:43

    You know, buy me Starbucks sometime and I'll tell you about it.

    15:43-15:51

    But I was the pastor of this church somehow while I was going to Bible college and while I was working about five other jobs.

    15:51-15:56

    One of my other jobs was I was a magazine vendor for Walmarts and Kmarts and I would just invite people to church as I was at work.

    15:56-15:57

    I'm like, "Hey, you wanna come to my church?

    15:57-16:09

    "Wanna come to church?" And there were a couple cashiers from the one Kmart that came to church for a couple of weeks and then they stopped coming.

    16:09-16:15

    So the next time I was doing the magazines, I saw them and the girl's name was Gina.

    16:17-16:23

    I said, "Gina, I haven't seen you in church." And I'll never forget, this was over 20 years ago, I'll never forget what she said to me.

    16:25-16:34

    She said, "I can't go to church and still live the way that I want to live." It was sad.

    16:35-16:36

    But what was she saying?

    16:37-16:46

    She's saying, "I'm not ready to know Christ." In other words, to use this John the Baptist picture here, she's saying, "The highway's not clear, and I'm not willing to clear it.

    16:48-16:58

    There's some obstacles that I'm just not willing to remove." You're like, "Man, you have a biblical example of that." Yeah. How about Matthew 19? Remember the rich young ruler?

    16:58-17:00

    That's like his whole story, right?

    17:01-17:09

    Or the guy came to Jesus and said, "What do I have to do to follow you?" And Jesus said, "Well, keep the commandments." And the guy was like, "OK, I totally did that." And Jesus said, "There's one thing you lack.

    Solid possessions. Give the money to the poor, and then you can come and follow me." And the guy went away sad because he had great wealth.

    17:14-17:15

    Remember that story?

    17:17-17:25

    See, Jesus knew that the obstacle on the highway to that man's heart was money.

    17:25-17:27

    Jesus said, "You want to know me?

    17:29-17:32

    Get the obstacle out of the way." And the man walked away sad.

    17:35-17:38

    because his obstacle meant too much to him.

    17:40-17:46

    So the question for you and I this morning is this, what's your obstacle for knowing Christ?

    17:49-17:56

    What's on the highway to your heart that's a big roadblock to your relationship with Jesus Christ?

    17:58-18:04

    In other words, what does your heart want more than it wants Jesus?

    18:07-18:09

    That's really the issue here, church.

    18:10-18:11

    That's really the issue.

    18:11-18:17

    Your heart wants something more than it wants Jesus, and it's not willing to get that obstacle out of the way.

    18:20-18:22

    For some people, like the rich young ruler, it is money.

    18:24-18:30

    My work, my job, the money, it's just too important to me to get really serious about coming to know Jesus.

    18:31-18:33

    For some people, it's their schedule.

    18:33-18:35

    "I'm just too busy. I'm just too busy to know Jesus.

    18:36-18:40

    And I can't seem to fit Jesus into my schedule." Wow.

    18:43-18:45

    For some people, it's pornography.

    18:48-18:55

    Man, I'm stuck, and I know that it's this roadblock that Christ wants to deal with, but I am not willing to deal with it.

    18:58-19:02

    For some it's a relationship that you know you shouldn't be in, but here you are.

    19:03-19:08

    You're stuck in this relationship, and you know Christ wants to deal with this, and you're not willing to deal with it.

    19:10-19:11

    Maybe for some it's comfort.

    19:13-19:16

    You know, it's just easier for me to live my life on my terms.

    19:19-19:23

    Yes, yes, yes. Jesus, He forgives.

    19:25-19:26

    Jesus cleanses.

    19:27-19:30

    Jesus transforms when you come to know Him.

    19:31-19:41

    But the problem comes when you know that coming to Jesus means that you have to deal with this hard stuff and you'd rather not come to Him.

    19:42-19:44

    Because you don't want Him to deal with the hard stuff.

    19:45-19:45

    That's the issue.

    19:48-19:53

    It's not the lack of wanting on His end, or the lack of power to deal with it on His end.

    19:53-19:58

    It's your lack of willingness to let Jesus do what only Jesus can do.

    20:01-20:03

    And see, that's why John the Baptist showed up.

    20:03-20:10

    He's like, "Hey, the Messiah's here! Clear the path!" Because He's going to change everything.

    20:12-20:14

    But don't show up half-dressed.

    20:15-20:16

    You've got to be ready.

    20:19-20:26

    What needs cleared from your heart to prepare the way of the Lord into your heart?

    20:27-20:29

    In other words, finish this sentence.

    20:31-20:37

    If I'm going to follow Jesus, I know that I am going to need to get rid of blank.

    20:39-20:40

    What goes into blank?

    20:44-20:45

    And that's what you need to do, right?

    20:46-20:47

    That's what the Bible calls repentance.

    20:50-20:52

    And you're like, "You know what, Jeff?

    20:52-20:54

    I know I need to do that. I know.

    20:56-20:58

    But how am I going to be motivated to do that?

    20:59-21:01

    It's here, it's just not here.

    21:01-21:04

    How am I going to be motivated to do that?" I'm so glad you asked. Look at number 2.

    21:05-21:13

    "Not only your heart must be ready," number 2, "your heart must exalt Him." "Your heart must exalt Him." Look at verses 25-28.

    21:14-21:25

    Because they asked him, "Why are you baptizing if you are neither the Christ nor Elijah nor the prophet?" John answered them, "I baptize you with water.

    21:26-21:43

    But among you stands one you do not know, even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie." These things took place in Bethany in Jordan where John was baptizing.

    21:45-21:46

    Your heart must exalt Him.

    21:48-21:49

    That has to be your motivation.

    21:51-21:56

    Looking at the text here, obviously these people that came to John had a big authority issue.

    21:57-22:07

    They're like, alright, so if you're not the Christ, and you're not Elijah, and you're not the prophet, then where do you get off doing this baptism thing that you're doing?

    22:10-22:10

    You see John's answer?

    22:11-22:16

    His answer was basically, "Look, what I'm doing is just the symbol.

    22:18-22:20

    I'm not the main event here.

    22:21-22:26

    You guys are putting the spotlight on me, but the spotlight doesn't go on me.

    22:26-22:32

    The spotlight goes on Jesus Christ." John's like, "Your problem is you don't know Him.

    22:33-22:37

    That's why you're focused too much on what I'm doing instead of what he's doing.

    22:40-22:41

    You can't miss this.

    22:41-22:43

    Oh gosh, this is a whole other sermon.

    And I know we've already had - this is like the second sermon of the day.

    I get that.

    22:49-22:51

    Man, I wish I had the time.

    Let me say this.

    22:53-22:58

    Despite John the Baptist's popularity, John the Baptist knew his own identity.

    23:00-23:04

    And that is a much bigger achievement you might think it is.

    23:06-23:06

    Why?

    23:09-23:10

    Think of this man.

    23:12-23:14

    Thousands and thousands of people were coming to him.

    23:14-23:16

    How many times do you think he was asked if he was the Christ?

    23:19-23:20

    I'm going to be honest with you.

    23:21-23:27

    It's hard for me to wrap my brain around how did that not go to his head?

    23:27-23:28

    Right?

    23:28-23:29

    Could you imagine?

    23:30-23:35

    Thousands, "Are you the Christ?" They thought this guy was so awesome, they're like, "You have to be the Christ.

    23:35-23:37

    You have to be the anointed One of God.

    23:37-23:40

    You have to be the One promised in the Scriptures.

    23:40-23:53

    That has to be you." And you know, after you have people applauding you for so long, it's real easy to start to think that you must be pretty special.

    23:55-23:58

    But John the Baptist knew his messages did not make him great.

    was the subject of His messages.

    24:03-24:04

    That was great.

    24:07-24:10

    In the same way, you have to see Jesus Christ for who He is.

    24:11-24:12

    We covered that last week, right?

    24:12-24:15

    We saw in the prologue, He is God.

    24:15-24:16

    He is the Creator.

    24:17-24:18

    He is life.

    24:18-24:20

    He is the light that leads to the life.

    24:20-24:22

    He alone makes people children of God.

    24:23-24:24

    He's full of grace and truth.

    24:24-24:27

    He alone is the revealer of God.

    24:27-24:43

    And when you get that, like John, when you really get who Jesus Christ is, you realize, again like John, I'm not even worthy to untie his shoes.

    24:46-25:00

    But at the same time, this God, this awesome, holy, sovereign, transcendent God, This God wants to know me and wants me to know Him?

    25:03-25:16

    This God wants a relationship with me and He's just saying, "Hey, I want to live in your heart so can you clear a path?" There's your motivation.

    25:18-25:19

    When you see how awesome He is.

    25:20-25:27

    You're like, "Yeah, I'll get rid of anything You've got to stop me from knowing this God.

    25:29-25:31

    You've got to see Jesus for who He is.

    25:31-25:32

    You've got to exalt Him.

    25:32-25:37

    And that humbly motivates you to do whatever it takes to know Him.

    25:38-25:40

    Your heart must exalt Him.

    25:40-25:45

    And then finally for today, jot this down, your heart must receive what He gives.

    25:46-25:53

    Your heart must receive what He actually gives.

    25:55-25:56

    Look at v. 29.

    25:59-26:24

    It says, "The next day, he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming toward him and said, 'Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!' This is He of whom I said, 'After Me comes a man who ranks before Me because he was before Me.'" Speaking of the deity of Christ there.

    26:25-26:28

    Verse 31, John says, "I myself did not know Him.

    26:29-26:35

    For this purpose, I came baptizing with water, that He might be revealed to Israel.

    26:37-26:50

    And John bore witness, I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on Him." I myself did not know Him.

    26:50-27:11

    But He who sent me to baptize with water - that's God - said to me, "He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." And I have seen and I have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

    27:12-27:14

    Your heart must receive what He gives.

    27:17-27:21

    Jesus Christ's baptism is what officially kicked off His ministry.

    27:22-27:30

    And here, we don't really have the account of the baptism, but sort of John giving us a flashback, a recalling.

    Here's what happened when Jesus came to me to be baptized.

    Did you notice, even John the Baptist said he didn't know Jesus at first.

    27:39-27:41

    Did you notice that he said that twice?

    27:41-27:42

    Like verse 31, verse 33?

    I didn't know Him.

    27:48-27:48

    Why?

    27:50-27:52

    Because Jesus looked like every other Jewish man in the area.

    27:53-27:54

    Right?

    27:55-28:04

    You had thousands of people coming to John the Baptist, and it wasn't like Jesus was eight feet tall and glowing with the blonde hair like you see the American portraits of Him.

    28:05-28:06

    He didn't look like that at all.

    28:07-28:13

    So all these Jewish men coming to John the Baptist, he's like, "I didn't know who the Christ was.

    28:14-28:17

    There wasn't anything except this one sign.

    28:19-28:22

    And yes, they were related by blood and all that.

    28:22-28:23

    That's another story.

    28:23-28:25

    But John said, "I didn't know.

    28:26-28:31

    I didn't know." But when Jesus was baptized, it was confirmed.

    28:33-28:34

    And John saw it and he bears witness.

    28:37-28:44

    He says, "This is the Son of God." on board witness to two things in this passage.

    28:44-28:45

    Two things that the Son of God offers.

    28:48-28:49

    Look at verse 29.

    28:49-28:51

    This is one of the best verses in the whole New Testament.

    28:53-29:13

    When John says concerning Jesus, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." We might be familiar enough with the message that we lose the impact, I have to try to imagine this statement as a first century Jew.

    29:14-29:15

    They're waiting for the Messiah.

    29:15-29:23

    And in their mind, it's going to be this awesome warrior king that's going to come through with his sword and just mow down the Romans.

    29:23-29:24

    That's what they're looking for.

    29:24-29:29

    They're looking for Samson on steroids kind of thing, right?

    29:30-29:33

    And the Messiah's here, and what does John the Baptist call Him?

    29:34-29:35

    He calls Him a lamb.

    29:37-29:40

    And again, I think the impact is lost on us, Imagine a first century Jew.

    29:40-29:43

    What's the first thing they think of when they hear "lamb"?

    29:44-29:45

    Like, oh, a sacrifice.

    29:46-29:53

    Lambs are these weak, helpless, defenseless, heading for death creatures.

    29:56-29:57

    This is the Messiah.

    29:59-30:01

    John's like, yeah, this is the Messiah.

    30:01-30:07

    He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

    30:07-30:12

    Now that obviously doesn't mean Just because Jesus came, all sin is gone.

    30:12-30:14

    What this means is this.

    30:15-30:21

    For the whole world, there is One Who can take away sin.

    30:23-30:28

    Remember, v. 12 says that we have to receive and we have to believe in His name.

    30:28-30:39

    And when you do, when you receive Christ, The Bible says He takes away your sin.

    30:41-30:42

    Takes away.

    30:44-30:44

    See, that's huge.

    30:45-30:49

    That's huge because in the Old Testament, countless sacrifices were made.

    30:49-30:53

    Countless rams and lambs and birds and goats.

    30:53-31:02

    There are just constantly sacrifices being made, but none of those Old Testament sacrifices could take away sin.

    31:04-31:08

    they could do was atone sin or cover sin.

    31:09-31:16

    And there is a big difference between covering sin and taking away sin.

    31:18-31:25

    There's a big difference between covering something and taking away something.

    31:26-31:27

    You understand the difference?

    31:28-31:29

    Let me illustrate that for you.

    31:29-31:41

    A few months ago, Cade was-- we have this little storage space in our house, under our house, a little crawl space where we store decorations and toys and whatever.

    31:41-31:44

    And Cade was under there looking for something.

    31:44-31:57

    And he came up and he said to Aaron, he goes, Mom, do we have any toy rubber snakes stored under there?

    31:59-32:23

    And Aaron's like, "Jeff!" So I'm like, "What do you see, Kade?" Kade's like, "I saw a snake. Do we have any toy snakes down there?" And I'm like, "I don't. Do you?" And Aaron's like, "Jeff, you're going to have to deal with this." So do you know what I did?

    32:24-32:30

    As I went into the kitchen, I got one of her tea towels, and I crawled under that crawl space.

    32:30-32:33

    And I found the snake, and I put the tea towel over the snake.

    32:34-32:35

    And I'm like, done.

    32:38-32:39

    Snake is covered.

    32:44-32:45

    Is that what Aaron wanted?

    32:47-32:50

    Do you see now the difference between covering and taking away?

    32:51-32:52

    You know what I actually did with the snake?

    32:52-32:56

    Was I put him in a little bin and it was a little guard of snakes.

    32:56-33:03

    I played with him for a little bit, but I took him away someplace else.

    33:03-33:05

    Didn't have the heart, I didn't have the heart to kill him.

    33:05-33:11

    I mean, but do you see the difference between covering and taking away?

    33:14-33:20

    That's the difference between what happened in the Old Testament to sin and what Jesus Christ does to sin.

    33:20-33:22

    And he doesn't just throw the tea towel over it.

    33:23-33:24

    He takes it away.

    33:26-33:31

    Or to put it another way, sin is a debt against God.

    33:31-33:35

    And the Old Testament sacrifices, well, they were like a credit card.

    33:37-33:41

    You know, a credit card doesn't actually pay for something.

    33:41-33:42

    You know that, right?

    33:43-33:48

    A credit card covers the amount that's owed.

    33:50-33:51

    But that bill still comes.

    33:53-33:56

    Payment still needs to be made.

    33:56-34:00

    And you see, the Old Testament sacrifices were sort of like that.

    34:00-34:04

    Every time a sacrifice was made, it was just swiping the credit card, swiping the credit card.

    34:04-34:05

    Okay, you're covered.

    34:05-34:07

    But sin is still there.

    34:07-34:08

    You're covered.

    34:11-34:14

    Then Jesus comes along and He's cash.

    34:14-34:15

    Jesus is cash.

    34:16-34:17

    He makes full payment.

    34:18-34:20

    Not just covering the debt.

    34:21-34:23

    Jesus takes away the debt.

    34:24-34:26

    That's the first thing Jesus offers.

    34:27-34:28

    That's taking away your sin.

    34:28-34:45

    The second thing Jesus offers, verse 33, when John says, "This is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." John's baptism with water in those days was a symbol of readiness.

    34:46-34:47

    Jesus offers the real baptism.

    34:49-34:53

    Baptism in the Holy Spirit is when you receive Jesus Christ.

    34:54-34:57

    His Spirit comes and lives inside you.

    34:57-35:00

    God's Holy Spirit comes and indwells your heart.

    35:02-35:08

    And that leads, 100% of the time, to transformation.

    35:10-35:13

    If you haven't changed, then you don't really know Christ.

    35:15-35:21

    Because when the God of the universe lives in your heart, you will change.

    35:21-35:26

    Jesus Christ changes your desires, your purpose in life, your attitudes.

    35:27-35:31

    Everything changes when you come to know Jesus Christ.

    35:33-35:36

    So your heart has to be ready to receive what He gives.

    35:37-35:46

    What He wants to give is taking away your sin and baptizing you in the Holy Spirit.

    35:46-35:47

    That's what He's offering.

    35:49-35:50

    But what are you looking for from Jesus?

    35:52-36:03

    "Jesus, get me out of this trouble that I'm in." Or, "Jesus, get me a husband." Or sometimes that one comes before the first one.

    36:05-36:14

    Or, "Jesus, please make me wealthy." Or, "Jesus, at the very least, will you please pay my bills?" I'll let my business take off.

    36:14-36:16

    Jesus, bring me more customers.

    36:16-36:23

    Jesus, will you please make my life easier?" But you know, Jesus didn't promise any of that.

    And there are so many people who end up disappointed in Jesus because they're trying to cash checks that He didn't write.

    Now, sure, 100%, Sometimes, Jesus provides these things to His children.

    But, what we see in this passage is what Jesus Christ always offers everyone.

    That's to take away your sin and to baptize you in the Holy Spirit.

    In other words, the thing that Jesus Christ offers everyone that you can take to the bank is forgiveness and transformation.

    That's what he's after.

    The external stuff, yeah, maybe, possibly.

    He's a father. He'll make those decisions.

    Trust him with that. Great.

    But these are the two things that he will give the person that turns to him.

    Forgiveness and transformation.

    And some people don't receive Christ because they're looking for things from Christ that Christ didn't offer.

    Are you ready to receive that?

    Are you ready to know Jesus?

    Then I would say exalt Him.

    Clear the path in your heart to know Him.

    Somebody today might be ready to do that right now.

    And I'd like you to bow your heads.

    Let me ask you, have you cleared any obstacle in your heart?

    Did you prepare the way for the Lord?

    Listen, whatever that obstacle is, Jesus knows what it is, and He will forgive you for whatever that is, and He will transform you.

    But you have to be willing to allow Him to do that.

    Have you exalted Christ in your heart?

    To say, "This God is worth knowing, a God that would adopt me as His child, a God who would love me and give me everything in Christ, every spiritual blessing is mine in Christ.

    This is a God who wants to forgive me and transform me." Father, we bow ourselves before You today.

    There are people here that know You.

    That while they are saved, while they do have Your Holy Spirit, they just haven't been walking with You.

    They've allowed obstacles to get back in the road that yes, Father, from Your perspective, we have fellowship in Christ, but Your Word is very clear that we can hinder our own walks with Christ.

    We can feel distant, not from Christ's doing, but from our own doing.

    I pray, Father, that today is the day of repentance.

    And Father, for the person here who doesn't know You, maybe for the first time, the lights are coming on.

    I pray, first of all, Father, that You would be greatly magnified in their heart.

    That they would see Christ for who He is.

    This glorious and gracious God, full of grace and truth, who loves us and wants better for us, wants to forgive us, wants to transform us.

    And now that he knows about her, that makes him want to know her, right?

    "I want to meet her!" Do you see the difference?

    The Gospel of John is written to take us from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    Knowing about Jesus or the facts, that's going to lead you to wanting to know Jesus personally even more.

    And that's the whole theme of John, you know.

    The God of the universe has revealed Himself by coming into this world as a man, Jesus Christ, to save you and to have a personal relationship with you.

    In fact, Jesus said it this way in John 17, verse 3, Jesus was in the garden and He was praying.

    But I want you to see one of the things that Jesus said while He was praying.

    He said, "And this is eternal life." Like, whoa, whoa, your ears better perk up here.

    What is eternal life?

    Look at what Jesus says eternal life is.

    "This is eternal life, that they may..." What's it say?

    "Know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." You know, when you think about it, that's about the boldest statement a human being can make.

    To say, "You can personally know the Almighty." Like, well, how in the world is that possible?

    Well, John 1:18 says, "No one has ever seen God." The only God who is at the Father's side, He has made Him known.

    And that's a fundamental truth that's going to drive this whole series in John.

    There's only one way that we can know God.

    He has to make Himself known.

    04:50-04:54

    And the great news, according to this verse, is that He has.

    And He's done it in the most personal way possible.

    He showed up, and He introduced Himself.

    So John 1, we're going to be looking at the first 18 verses today.

    The title of the message, if you're taking notes, I want you to jot some things down.

    "He has made Himself known." We're just going to look at three things Jesus Christ has revealed about Himself.

    Therefore, three things that Jesus Christ has revealed about God.

    Alright? We're going to be answering three questions, and the first question is this, "Who is Jesus?" And the answer you're going to see very clearly in the text, "He is God." He is God.

    Luke 1-3 says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." He was in the beginning with God.

    All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

    05:47-05:49

    Who is Jesus? He is God.

    05:49-05:56

    Notice how John starts out under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "in the beginning." Does that sound familiar? Where have you heard that phrase before?

    "In the beginning." Where have you heard that before?

    Genesis 1, right?

    He says, "In the beginning was the Word." The Word was with God and the Word was God.

    Why did he choose the word "Word"?

    Well, there are a lot of reasons, but specifically to the Jews, the word "word" has major significance.

    Because when you read the Old Testament, you see, "The word of the Lord came to this prophet," or, "The word of the Lord came to that prophet." And you know when you read the Old Testament that God is very serious about His word.

    That's why at Harvest Bible Chapel, we are very serious about God's word.

    Because He is.

    Why is God so serious about the Word?

    Why are we so serious about the Word of God?

    Well, let me ask you, what is the purpose of words?

    What's the purpose of words?

    Words are to communicate something, right?

    That's why John uses the word "Word." He doesn't say, "In the beginning was the thought, and the thought was with God, and the thought was God." He doesn't say that.

    He doesn't say "deed." "In the beginning was the deed, and the deed was with God, and the deed was God." Very specifically, He uses the word "Word." Because "Word" is something that's deliberately used to convey information to another person.

    We're going to see in a couple moments in verse 17 that this Word has a name.

    The name is Jesus Christ.

    Jesus is His name. Christ isn't His last name, by the way.

    It's a title. It means Messiah, the Anointed One, the One Promised.

    But Jesus is God's communication to man. He's a living, breathing Word.

    You see, this is where cults get all messed up, and how they evaluate this question, "Who is Jesus Christ?" Depending on which cult you ask, some people say, "Well, Jesus was just a prophet." Some cults say, "Jesus was Satan's brother." Or, "He was an angel." Or, "He was this advanced human." And they all deny what Jesus has very clearly revealed about Himself.

    Do you see that? He was with God and was God.

    He is God and is with God at the same time.

    You're like, "All right, Pastor Jeff, we'll explain that one." Are you ready? I can't. I cannot explain that.

    That statement cannot be explained.

    If I said to you, "Yesterday, I was with my friend Nathaniel, And I was my friend Nathaniel.

    You'd be like, "Were you drinking with Nathaniel?" That statement doesn't make any sense.

    How can you be with somebody and be somebody at the same time?

    08:37-08:38

    It makes no human sense.

    08:38-08:42

    And the truth is, it can't make sense to us. Why?

    08:43-08:44

    Because here's the thing, church.

    08:44-08:49

    From the minute you were born, you've only ever known two things in your life.

    08:50-08:52

    That's time and space. Right?

    08:52-08:57

    We can't fathom an existence outside of time and space.

    08:58-09:02

    What would it be like to live in existence where space isn't a thing?

    09:02-09:04

    We have no idea because that's all we've ever known.

    09:05-09:09

    What about time? What would it be like to live in existence outside of time?

    09:09-09:14

    I have no idea because the only thing I've ever known is time and space.

    09:15-09:18

    Well, you see, God lives outside of time and space.

    09:18-09:25

    He lives a level of existence that doesn't make sense to a finite mind bound in time and space.

    09:26-09:33

    So, can I logically explain how Jesus is with God and He is God at the same time? I can't.

    09:33-09:40

    The only thing that's logical is that we should have an inability to explain a God who lives outside of time and space.

    09:41-09:43

    This is just what the Bible says.

    I guess it's kind of ironic that the only thing that makes sense is that a God like that can't make sense to us.

    But this is how He's revealed Himself.

    09:52-09:58

    Someone once said that God created man in His own image, and then man returned the favor.

    And that's why the Word is so important.

    10:01-10:12

    That's why when you come to Harvest Bible Chapel, we're like, "What does the Word say?" And the messages come from the Word, because it's not up to us to define God, because He's revealed Himself.

    But that sure doesn't stop us from trying, does it?

    People want to redefine God.

    10:16-10:19

    People want to make God in their own image.

    10:19-10:22

    People say things like, "Well, God just forgives everyone.

    10:22-10:24

    It doesn't matter about Jesus.

    10:25-10:26

    None of that stuff really matters.

    10:26-10:32

    God just forgives everyone." Or people say, "You know, God would never allow anyone to go to hell.

    10:32-10:36

    That's not God." Or, "God wants to make me wealthy.

    10:37-10:38

    That's God.

    10:38-10:44

    That's God's mission is to make me wealthy." And none of those things have been revealed to us in His Word.

    You see, in the Word, the written Word, which talks about the living Word, Jesus Christ, when Jesus came into the earth, God was saying, "This is who I am.

    I'm not like this, and I'm not like that. I am this." And the clear teaching of the Bible in the Old Testament, throughout John, as we will see, and throughout the New Testament, is Jesus is God.

    And we preach Him, and we worship Him, and we celebrate Him as nothing lesser than that.

    He is God.

    11:16-11:17

    Who is Jesus? He is God.

    11:17-11:20

    The second question, why did Jesus come to earth?

    11:20-11:23

    The answer is, to give life.

    11:23-11:24

    Look at verse 4.

    11:24-11:36

    It says, "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." First of all, "In Him was life," meaning Jesus didn't get life from someone else.

    11:36-11:38

    He's actually the source of life.

    11:38-11:44

    But then he says, this is an interesting statement, he says, "The life was the light of men." What's he talking about here?

    11:45-11:46

    Listen very closely.

    11:47-11:53

    What he's saying is, Jesus is not only the end, He's the means to the end.

    11:53-11:54

    What do you mean by that?

    11:55-11:55

    Here's what I mean.

    The Bible says that Jesus is the good shepherd, right?

    11:59-11:59

    He's the good shepherd.

    12:00-12:04

    At the same time, Jesus is also the door to the sheepfold.

    He's the shepherd and the door at the same time.

    12:07-12:11

    Jesus, the Bible says, is the Lamb of God.

    He sacrificed Himself to take away our sin.

    12:16-12:23

    You know, the Bible says that Jesus Christ is also, at the same time, the High Priest who offers the sacrifice on the cross.

    12:24-12:27

    He's the Lamb and the Priest at the same time.

    12:27-12:36

    And in the same way, here, Jesus Christ not only is the life, but He is the light that leads us to the life.

    12:36-12:39

    Because the world is full of darkness and death.

    12:39-12:40

    Have you noticed?

    12:41-12:45

    The world is a dark and dying and dead place.

    12:46-12:53

    And Jesus came to give life, but at the same time He's the light that leads to the life.

    12:53-12:54

    Further explanation, look at verse 5.

    12:55-13:02

    "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." When Jesus arrived on the earth, it was like God turned the lights on.

    shedding light on truths about who is God, who is man, what is sin.

    And this light forced the darkness of sin and ignorance away.

    13:13-13:16

    He says the light cannot be overcome by the darkness.

    13:16-13:21

    It never gets so dark that the darkness smothers light, right?

    You've never been to a cavern or a cave so dark that you strike a match and the darkness just sucks up the light because it's so dark.

    My little match can't overpower it.

    13:33-13:34

    That's a scientific impossibility.

    13:35-13:37

    That's also true about Jesus Christ.

    This world is a dark place, but I'm telling you, the darkness can't overcome the light of Jesus Christ.

    But the darkness will not overcome.

    Light always wins.

    He says, "There was a man sent from God whose name was John." This is talking about John the Baptist, not the John who wrote this Gospel.

    He says, "He came as a witness to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him.

    14:11-14:15

    He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

    14:15-14:30

    The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world." So he mentions John the Baptist, A key figure prophesied in the Old Testament, in the book of Isaiah, in the book of Malachi, and we're going to talk about him more in a minute.

    But verse 9 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the only light.

    14:34-14:37

    Only Jesus Christ can truly enlighten someone.

    14:37-14:43

    So the only way, the only way that you can truly help someone is by pointing them to Jesus Christ.

    The only way you are able to truly help someone is to point them to Jesus Christ.

    As a pastor, I do counseling.

    14:51-14:57

    And I tell people straight up front, there's only one type of counseling that I do, and it's biblical counseling.

    Like, what's biblical counseling?

    14:58-15:00

    Well, biblical counseling is only for believers.

    I don't do secular counseling.

    15:05-15:07

    And I thought about that some more, and I really, I can't.

    I can't do secular counseling.

    And then I thought about it more.

    Now, you know what? I won't.

    I won't do secular counseling. Why?

    Because it doesn't help.

    Oh, sure, it might be the pain pill that makes you feel better for a couple hours.

    It might be the Band-Aid that you put on cancer.

    But secular counseling doesn't really help.

    The only type of counseling I do is biblical counseling.

    So the only people that I am really able to counsel are Christians, people who are born again, who have the Word of God as their authority.

    Because the only way I can truly help someone is by pointing to the light that is Jesus Christ.

    You're like, "Wait a second, Pastor Jeff, that sounds awfully narrow-minded.

    15:48-15:53

    I mean, what if somebody comes to you for counseling, and they're not a believer in Jesus Christ, what do you tell them?

    What do you think I tell them?

    "Yeah, I tell them about Jesus, and I tell them up front, 'Look, I can't help you.

    I can't help you, but I know somebody that can, and his name is Jesus Christ, and he's been helping people for like 2,000 years now, and he can transform you, and he can change you.

    Go to Jesus Christ. I can't help you, but I can point you to somebody who can, because he's the one that can enlighten." Look at verse 10. It says, "He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him.

    He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him." These are some of the saddest verses in the Bible when you think about it.

    Here, God Almighty, the Creator of everything, showed up to His creation.

    He shows up, and they didn't recognize Him.

    That's not sad enough. It says, "He came to His own." Who were His own? It's Israel, right?

    Ever since creation, God promised Israel that the Messiah was coming.

    The Messiah is coming.

    16:49-16:54

    And there's all these writings in the Old Testament describing Him, and what He's going to be like, and what He's going to do.

    And Israel had centuries and centuries and centuries of prophecies and promises of the coming Messiah, and He's here!

    And Israel didn't recognize Him. It's sad.

    And you're like, "Well, mission failure then, right?" No. Look at verse 12. It says, "But to all who did receive Him, who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God." This is how the light leads to life.

    To those who received Him, those who believed in His name, those are synonyms, really.

    To receive Jesus Christ is to believe in His name.

    And when you believe in His name, that is receiving Jesus Christ.

    And when you truly receive Christ, He gives you the right to become what?

    What does your Bible say? He gives you the right to become what?

    He gives you the right to become religious.

    Is that what your Bible says? That's what some people think it says.

    For those who received Him, He gives you the right to become a church member.

    That's not what it says either.

    It says He gives you the right to become a child of God.

    See, this is about a personal relationship, not about religion.

    A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from somebody.

    I don't know how they found me online or whatever.

    They're like, "Hey, I want to have a wedding.

    "Me and my fiance wanna have a wedding." And Justin smiling, "You were part of this, right?" And they're like, "I wanna have a wedding, "but I don't want it to be religious." I'm like, "Awesome, "because I don't want it to be religious either." And I replied like, "Look, we're not about religion "at our church, we're about a transforming relationship "with Jesus Christ, and I would love to tell you about that." There's a huge difference.

    She didn't email me back after I said that.

    And sometimes it's hard to not take things personally, but I didn't.

    But here's the point, do you see it in the text?

    What God wants for you is not religion.

    What God wants for you is a relationship.

    Like, well, what kind of relationship does he want?

    Did you see that?

    A child of God.

    And if you have a child, you know how deep that relationship is between parent and child, right?

    And you're like, I don't have any children, Pastor Jeff.

    Do you have a parent?

    How many people in here had parents at one point?

    How many of us have parents?

    Okay, we established that.

    You get the closeness of the relationship.

    And isn't it awesome that God Almighty says, "I want to be your Father." That's the kind of relationship I want with you.

    Look at verse 13, it says, "Who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." In other words, you become a child of God, not in the usual ways that someone becomes a child.

    It's a work of God.

    He says, "You don't become a child of God from blood." Meaning, no offense, It doesn't matter how great of a Christian your grandmama was.

    Your grandmama might have been the greatest saint walking the earth in her day, but that does nothing for your walk.

    That does nothing for your salvation. Nothing!

    You're not going to stand before the Lord someday, and the Lord's like, "Oh, your grandma was who?

    Well, let's fetch her up here!" It's not about that. It's not blood.

    You don't become a child of God by a will of the flesh.

    Meaning, hear this, It's not even a personal act on your part that makes you a child of God.

    You don't walk in and say, "Huh, those baptisms were interesting.

    Well, you know what? Today I'm making myself a child of God.

    Today I am born againing myself." He says it's not the will of man, meaning it's not the act of another person.

    Like me and the elders get together and we just get in your face and like, "Guess what? Today you are a child of God!" They're like, "Well, the elder said it, so I guess I'm a child of God." No, no, no, it's not the will of man.

    How do you become a child of God?

    20:34-20:42

    He says, look again, verse 13, "Born not of blood, nor the will of the flesh, nor the will of man, but of God." This is a work of God.

    Hear this, as much as you may want to, you cannot, you cannot, you cannot make someone receive eternal life in Jesus Christ.

    You can't do it.

    Believe me, there are times I wish that I could put somebody in a headlock and drag them to the baptistry.

    And you are giving your life to Christ today, man!

    You can't do it. You can't do it by your will.

    I can't do it by my will. This is a work of God.

    Parents, you can't force your children to love Jesus Christ.

    In our last Next Generation Prayer Meeting, we were praying for the salvation of our children and the children in this church.

    We can't do it.

    No matter how many times they go to harvest kids, no matter how many times they sit in youth group, we can't make someone become a child of God.

    Like, "Well, if I can't do it, what is my part?" Well, prayer, obviously. This is a spiritual thing.

    Prayer. And remember I said we were going to talk about John the Baptist again?

    Our job is just like John the Baptist's job.

    We saw in verse 7.

    To bear witness about the light. Right?

    That's our job.

    See, John the Baptist totally got it.

    The guy was mega popular, but he's like, "I'm not the light." Jesus Christ is the light. Follow Him. Go to Him. Believe in Him.

    I'm here to witness to Him. It's not me, it's Him.

    And that's how ministry works, by the way.

    Bearing witness about the light and pointing people to Jesus Christ.

    The light that leads to life.

    That's our job, church. Pointing to the light.

    Pointing people to the light. Directing people to the light.

    Do you know Jesus Christ? Do you know who He is? Do you know what He's done?

    Pointing people to the light. Taking people to Jesus Jesus deal with them, because that's why He came.

    And finally, we saw who is Jesus?

    Well, He's God.

    22:33-22:34

    And what's His purpose?

    Well, He came to give life.

    Third question we see in the text.

    What's Jesus like?

    22:40-22:42

    The answer is He's full of grace and truth.

    Look at verse 14.

    It says, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory." Glory as of the only Son from the Father, "Full of..." There it is. "Grace and truth." "The Word became flesh." That's the Christmas story.

    God became a man.

    Interestingly, he says, "The Word became flesh and dwelt among us." Literally, in the original language, it's "The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us." That's a weird way to say that.

    Well, when you go back to the Old Testament, you see Moses was instructed to build this tabernacle, This portable building that they tore down and carried with them and set back up.

    But part of the tabernacle is where they rested the Ark of the Covenant.

    And that's where God's unique presence was in the tabernacle.

    23:36-23:45

    So if you were living in Old Testament Israel times and somebody came up to you and said, "Hey, where's God?" You'd point to the tabernacle.

    You'd be like, "He's there." That is where God's presence rests.

    23:50-23:59

    You see, John says, "The Word became flesh and tabernacled among us." In other words, when Jesus was walking on the earth, where was God's unique presence?

    It was in a person.

    You point to Jesus Christ.

    There's God's presence. There's God right there.

    24:04-24:07

    There He is. God is that man.

    You're like, "Okay, well, where's God's unique presence today?" The Bible says that our bodies, our hearts, are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

    God's unique presence today is in the heart of every believer through the power of His Holy Spirit.

    The Word became flesh and tabernacled.

    24:24-24:26

    God's unique presence found in one person.

    24:27-24:34

    John says, "We have seen His glory." John says, "We saw the glory of God when we looked on the sun." Man, what was that like?

    He tells us exactly what Jesus was like.

    He says, "Full of grace and truth." Full of grace and truth. Perfectly.

    Jesus was 100% perfectly gracious, and at the same time, He was 100% perfectly about the truth of God's Word.

    That's sort of hard for us to understand, right?

    Because as people, we're a little imbalanced, and we're a little lopsided there, aren't we?

    Some people are much grace and little truth.

    You're all about grace, not so fired up about the truth.

    What happens when you're much grace and little truth?

    Here's what happens - coddling.

    Never holding someone accountable.

    You enable sin.

    You ignore the transformation power of the gospel.

    We just overlook, "I'll just show grace, just show grace." "But the Bible says..." "We're just going to show them grace." That's lopsided.

    Is that you?

    Some people are much truth and little grace.

    25:37-25:39

    What happens when you're much truth and little grace?

    25:39-25:40

    You're harsh, right?

    25:41-25:41

    Harsh.

    "There's no room for mistakes!

    Look, man, this is what the Bible says, man, and you violated that!" You come across very judgmental.

    "Who hears much truth and little grace." Once again, we point to the light of Jesus Christ because we're like, man, He was perfect.

    He had it all.

    25:58-26:06

    He was full of grace, and He was full of truth, and it was never one at the expense of another.

    And John says, "That's what God is like." full of grace and full of truth." Verse 15, winding down here, "John bore witness about Him and cried out, 'This was He of whom I said, 'He who comes after Me ranks before Me because He was before Me.' And from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

    For the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ." No one has ever seen God.

    The only God who is at the Father's side, He has made Him known.

    Everything you need to know about God, everything, is found in Jesus Christ.

    He has made Him known.

    26:47-26:51

    And that's where we're going this year as we go through the Gospel of John.

    We want to know God by knowing Jesus.

    And not just knowing about Jesus, but knowing Jesus.

    Because knowing God through knowing Jesus leads to transformation.

    Because it leads to new life.

    These three things in this prologue, these three statements about Jesus, permeate the entire book of John.

    You're going to see this with every message.

    You're going to see these three things, that Jesus is God.

    You're going to see that He came to give you eternal life.

    You're going to see that He's full of grace and truth.

    Father, it's my prayer for myself and for this church that we move from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus.

    We move from facts on a piece of paper to personal relationship like a child with a father.

    Father, we know You're the only one that can do this.

    Again, this is our last message in our series called "Walk Wisely." And the title of today's message is "Sin Never Brings Success." Or, "Hard-Hearted, You're Only Hurting Yourself." Proverbs 28, we're going to focus on verse 14.

    01:20-01:43

    Proverbs 28.14 says, "Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity." Breaking that down, we defined the fear of the Lord in the first message in our series.

    01:44-01:51

    The fear of the Lord is living with this active awareness of God's constant presence in my life.

    01:51-01:52

    That's what the fear of the Lord is.

    01:53-01:57

    I know that God is with me, and He is watching me, and He is guiding me.

    And I live with this understanding that the Lord is with me.

    02:03-02:04

    That's the fear of the Lord.

    We want to close this series with the warning that comes in the second half of this verse.

    "Whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity." In other words, with everything that we've said the past two months, between myself and Alex Gianetti and Pastor Bob Huber, you can ignore all of it.

    But you're only hurting yourself.

    I mean, we've covered just a few of the topics that Proverbs covers.

    We talked about seduction-destruction.

    Remember, we talked about the danger of flirting with an inappropriate relationship.

    We talked about dealing with offenses and overlooking offenses.

    02:52-02:53

    And we talked about meddling.

    02:54-02:56

    Remember, stop grabbing random dogs.

    Stop getting in fights that have nothing to do with you.

    We talked about laziness.

    03:02-03:03

    We talked about gluttony.

    03:04-03:05

    Alex talked about money.

    And you can ignore all of this, but you're only hurting yourself.

    You can harden your heart, and you can persist on doing things your way instead of God's way.

    And according to this verse, when you do that, when you harden your heart, when you look at God's Word, when you hear God's Word and say, "No, I'm still going to do what I want to do," God's promise is you're going to fall into calamity, and you only have yourself to blame.

    Disregard God's Word, you'll suffer for it, because sin never brings success.

    But someone, someone will say, "Well, you know what, Pastor Jeff, I don't agree." Like Frank Sinatra, "I do it my way, and I'm doing okay." Or they say, "You know what, Pastor Jeff, I know someone who has a complete disregard for God and God's Word, and they're doing just fine." So what's this nonsense of, "Oh, if I don't live according to God's standards, I'm going to fall into calamity." And I don't believe that, Because I see people, and I've experienced it, they disregard God's Word, they're doing okay for themselves.

    Well, many years ago, I was at the barbershop.

    And as often happens when a group of guys are in the barbershop, we were talking about sports.

    And at the time, this was many years ago, but at the time, I was actively involved in sports.

    and that kind of came up in the conversation.

    My barber, who I had a great relationship with, introduced me to this guy who was sitting there, and this guy that was sitting there, he was about the unhealthiest looking person you've ever seen.

    You know, I'm not trying to say anything shameful or offensive, he was just an extremely unhealthy looking man.

    As we were talking about sports and my involvement in sports and such, This man said, "Don't do steroids." I was a little offended that that was his assumption was that I did.

    I would have rather he assumed that I did, but that's not where he went.

    He was just like, "Well, this guy obviously doesn't do steroids." So I let it pass.

    05:44-05:45

    I overlooked the offense.

    But he was serious.

    He goes, "Don't do steroids." I never have.

    You all look shocked.

    Honest, I never have.

    We know, we know, we know.

    I told the man, I said, "I've never done steroids." I said, "I know a lot of guys that do, but I've never done that." He goes, "Steroids will ruin you." He goes, "I'm telling you young man, stay away from steroids." I'm like, "Okay. Message received.

    Well, he left.

    He didn't get his hair cut.

    Apparently, he was just there to hang out.

    But when he left, my barber said, do you know who that guy was?

    And I'm like, pfft.

    I have no idea who that guy was.

    I've never seen him before.

    He was just some older man, very unhealthy looking man.

    I had no idea who he was.

    My barber said-- he was an award-winning bodybuilder.

    She said, "Back in the day, that guy was jacked." I'm like, "That guy?

    That guy was jacked?" I'm like, "That guy looks like he's never seen the inside of a gym.

    That guy doesn't even look like he knows a guy named Jim.

    I mean, that guy looks like the furthest thing from anything Jim related.

    Like that guy was like Mr. Olympia." And Barbara's like, "Oh yeah, you should have seen him back in the day, man.

    He was ripped." And I'm like, "Oh, now I understand why he was so adamant about telling me to avoid steroids." Like, "Why are you telling me this story?" Because here's the thing.

    Sin is like steroids.

    07:43-07:47

    Because steroids in the moment...

    07:47-07:51

    "Hey, this is working great! Look at how ripped I am!

    07:51-08:00

    Look at my performance! I am excelling and I am crushing the ball!" And in the moment, it's great.

    But as this man testified, it catches up with you eventually.

    08:06-08:08

    And we've all heard the stories, haven't we?

    08:10-08:17

    And I want to tell you, if you're sitting here thinking, "Well, I live my own way and it's never hurt me none." "Hey, sin is like steroids.

    You might think you're doing great now.

    08:19-08:30

    You might think you're crushing it now, but it is going to catch up to you eventually." Rejecting God's wisdom never lands you in a good place.

    08:32-08:34

    Sin doesn't bring success.

    08:35-08:38

    You harden your heart, you're going to fall into calamity.

    08:38-08:39

    You will ruin your marriage.

    08:40-08:42

    You will lose your job.

    08:42-08:47

    And if you refuse to come to Jesus Christ, you will forfeit eternal life.

    08:48-08:50

    Sin doesn't take you anywhere good.

    08:52-09:02

    And in this series, we've been ultra-specific, but now we're going to take a giant step back, and I want us to look at Proverbs, and I want us to look at God's Word as a whole.

    And today we're going to talk about your attitude towards the Word of God.

    Because this shapes everything.

    Your attitude concerning God's commands.

    09:17-09:28

    Proverbs 28.7 says, "The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding, but a companion of gluttons shames his father." We had a whole message on gluttony.

    We're not going to talk about that today.

    I want you to see the first part of this verse.

    09:31-09:39

    It says, "The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding." The one who keeps the law.

    09:39-09:48

    And right now somebody's like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, Pastor Jeff, hang on a second, you know, it's about a relationship with God, it's not about obedience to His Word.

    Pastor Jeff, do you even New Testament?

    09:51-09:53

    Because what you're saying right now sounds awfully legalistic.

    09:54-10:03

    You've got to obey the law, you've got to keep the law." I want you to hear this, because so many people get this so messed up.

    Obedience to the Word of God is not the opposite of having a relationship with God.

    In fact, the church, hear me, obedience to the Word of God is the key component to your walk with God.

    10:24-10:28

    You're like, "Where'd you come up with that?" Jesus said it!

    Look, John 14, 15.

    10:34-10:42

    Jesus said, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." You can say that in the negative.

    10:43-10:46

    In other words, if you don't love Christ, you're not going to keep His commandments.

    10:46-10:48

    And you can even switch it.

    10:48-10:50

    If you don't keep His commandments, do you know what that proves?

    10:51-10:52

    It proves you don't love Christ.

    10:53-11:00

    But when you seek to incorporate God's Word into your life, "I want to keep the commandments of God by your spirit.

    11:00-11:05

    I want to keep your commandments as proof that you love Christ.

    11:05-11:07

    He said it again, John 15:10.

    11:07-11:25

    Jesus said, "Look at this. If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love." You see, I obey the Word of God, not to earn God's love.

    11:26-11:28

    He's given that. That's grace.

    11:29-11:33

    But I obey God's commands because I love God.

    11:34-11:43

    And I recognize, hear this, I recognize that His commandments bless the person who, by the power of the Holy Spirit, walks wisely in them.

    As we've been going through Proverbs, you see Proverbs was written from the perspective of a dad giving advice to his son.

    11:54-11:56

    You have to see that in Proverbs.

    11:57-11:59

    Did your dad ever give you good advice?

    12:01-12:16

    Did your dad ever sit down with you and say, "Hey, son, I'm going to tell you how to manage your money." Or, "Son, I'm going to tell you how to have a good work ethic," or whatever advice you may have received from your dad.

    12:18-12:23

    But if your dad gave you good advice on something, and you had this attitude, "You know what?

    12:23-12:28

    I hear what dad's saying, but I don't have to obey my dad.

    12:28-12:31

    Like, if I disobey dad, it's not like he's going to kick me out of the family, right?

    12:31-12:35

    I mean, I'm going to be dad's kid whether I receive his word or not.

    12:36-12:41

    So I can just completely disregard because my relationship with my dad isn't based on obedience.

    12:42-12:44

    So I'm just going to do what I want to do.

    12:44-12:46

    Like, how foolish would that be?

    12:49-12:56

    The Proverbs is advice, so to speak, from the living God.

    Proverbs is your heavenly Father, your perfect heavenly Father, sitting down with you, giving you wisdom for your walk through navigating this earth.

    How foolish would we be to disregard His Word?

    13:15-13:18

    You have to see that God's commands They're not arbitrary.

    13:21-13:22

    It comes from a heart of love.

    13:23-13:26

    As we close this series, church, you have to see God's Word like this.

    He loves you.

    13:28-13:29

    And He wants what's best for you.

    13:29-13:35

    And receiving God's Word is for your benefit.

    13:35-13:40

    And disregarding His Word will take you to a bad place.

    13:40-13:52

    And Proverbs 28:7 says, "The one who keeps the law "A son with understanding." In other words, the son of understanding gets this.

    Like, I get what Dad's saying.

    13:55-13:56

    And I understand.

    I want to speak in human terms for a couple of moments.

    What motivates a son to obey his dad?

    What's the motivator?

    And the answer is really, it depends on what age you ask him, right?

    What motivates a five-year-old son to obey his dad?

    14:18-14:19

    Fear.

    14:20-14:23

    I have to obey him because he's way bigger than me.

    14:24-14:24

    Right?

    14:26-14:26

    Right?

    14:28-14:30

    That's what motivates a five-year-old to obey his dad.

    14:31-14:39

    But take that same five-year-old, fast forward 11 years, what motivates a 16-year-old son to obey his dad?

    14:41-14:43

    It's not fear, it's reward, right?

    14:43-14:51

    It's, "I better do what Dad says because I want to borrow the car this weekend." Right? True or false? Come on.

    14:51-14:52

    True or false?

    14:53-14:53

    Alright.

    14:54-14:56

    I see some people looking around, okay.

    14:56-14:59

    Looking around and smiling tells me that we hit a nerve here.

    15:01-15:04

    So age 5, I obey Dad because I'm afraid of him.

    15:05-15:06

    There's fear. There's a healthy fear.

    15:07-15:08

    Age 16, it's reward.

    15:08-15:10

    I want something and I benefit.

    15:12-15:17

    It motivates a son at age 30 to heed his father's advice.

    15:18-15:18

    You know what it is?

    15:20-15:21

    It's understanding.

    15:23-15:32

    It's, "I'm doing what Dad says because I see it now." He was right.

    15:34-15:35

    I'm 44 now.

    15:37-15:43

    And every year, I understand my Father a little bit more.

    15:44-15:47

    Oh, that's why He said that.

    15:47-15:49

    That's why He did this.

    15:49-15:50

    That's why He told me this.

    15:51-15:52

    I'm like, I'm getting it now.

    15:53-15:55

    Every year, more and more, I understand.

    15:57-16:03

    And you have to see this progression to maturity from 5 to 16 to 30.

    It's sort of the same in your spiritual walk, isn't it?

    You start out as a baby Christian, what motivates you to obey?

    16:14-16:18

    You're like, "Because He is God, and I am not, right?

    16:19-16:25

    He's God and I'm not, and He's bigger than me, so I should probably do what He says." And that's a great motivation.

    16:26-16:27

    But that's like maturity level one.

    16:29-16:34

    And as we go further in our walks, we realize there is reward in keeping God's Word.

    16:35-16:36

    It's good for me.

    16:37-16:38

    I get a benefit.

    16:39-16:43

    Alex was just talking about, I get a financial benefit by managing God's money, God's way.

    16:44-16:45

    I benefit from that.

    16:46-16:49

    I benefit raising my kids the way God said.

    16:49-16:52

    I benefit loving my wife the way God said to love my wife.

    16:52-16:55

    I get a personal benefit from all of that.

    16:55-16:56

    I'm motivated by reward.

    16:59-17:01

    That's maturity level two.

    17:01-17:04

    Hey, fear and reward, great motivators, all biblical, yes.

    But here's the point.

    17:07-17:09

    Maturity level three is understanding.

    You say, "You know, I get it now.

    17:13-17:20

    I understand the whole spiritual foundation of why God would tell me to do this.

    17:21-17:22

    It's a reflection of His character.

    17:23-17:24

    It glorifies His name.

    17:25-17:26

    It blesses other people.

    17:26-17:31

    It's a protection for me." Do you understand what I mean?

    17:32-17:33

    Let me give you an example.

    17:35-17:36

    We open up God's Word.

    17:36-17:49

    So he said, "Okay, it says here that God says to forgive when I've been wronged." Maturity level one says, "Well, I better forgive people because God says I should forgive and He's God and that's just what He says." Great.

    17:50-17:51

    Maturity level one.

    17:53-17:59

    And maturity level two is, you know, I should forgive that person because it's gonna be healthy for me in my walk.

    18:00-18:01

    Forgive that person.

    18:01-18:03

    That's gonna be a load off of me.

    18:04-18:05

    That's the reward.

    18:05-18:07

    And that's a great motivation.

    18:09-18:12

    Maturity level 3 says, "You know why I should forgive people?

    18:14-18:16

    Because it's the right thing to do.

    18:17-18:19

    Because it reflects God's character.

    18:20-18:27

    That's why I forgive people." That's how a son is motivated to obey.

    18:29-18:40

    But on the other hand, just as there's a progression to maturity for the son who wants to obey, You can also see there's a progression into immaturity for the son who is not motivated to obey, right?

    18:40-18:44

    The son who doesn't want to obey, what motivates him?

    18:45-18:47

    The answer is it depends on what age you ask him.

    18:49-18:53

    What motivates a five-year-old to disobey his dad?

    18:55-18:57

    The answer is foolishness, right?

    18:58-19:01

    "I don't wanna!" Like, why don't you wanna?

    19:01-19:05

    "I don't wanna!" and that's as far as he thought it out.

    19:07-19:07

    Right?

    19:09-19:10

    Parents of little ones, right?

    19:12-19:13

    But it's foolishness.

    19:14-19:21

    And at age 16, what motivates the 16-year-old son, and when I say son, you get the sons and daughters, you get that, right?

    You guys aren't so politically correct that you're gonna be offended if I don't.

    All right, I'll start switching it up.

    At age 16, what motivates that son to disobey?

    19:37-19:38

    The answer is selfishness, right?

    19:39-19:41

    I want to do what I want to do.

    19:43-19:45

    My dad is so out of touch.

    19:45-19:47

    My dad is so stupid.

    19:47-19:48

    He has no idea what's going on.

    19:51-19:51

    Selfishness.

    19:53-19:57

    What motivates the son to disobey at age 30?

    19:57-19:59

    Well, at that point, it's just flat out rebellion.

    20:01-20:04

    It's nobody tells me what to do, I don't care what my old man says.

    20:04-20:06

    My old man is not the boss of me anymore.

    20:06-20:08

    I do whatever the heck I want to do.

    20:10-20:11

    That's just rebellion.

    20:12-20:14

    You know how the Bible describes that?

    20:14-20:15

    It's hardening your heart.

    20:15-20:17

    That's what this proverb is about.

    20:18-20:21

    Whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

    20:23-20:32

    You see, Proverbs teaches these principles by contrasting wisdom and foolishness, righteousness and wickedness.

    20:34-20:37

    The Son of understanding and the Son of rebellion.

    20:39-20:43

    Proverbs gives the ultimate destination for the roads that each of them are traveling.

    20:45-20:48

    And that's what you need to see when you read Proverbs.

    20:49-20:59

    "Talking wisely blesses you, but if you refuse God's Word, you're only hurting yourself." Can you see Proverbs for what it is?

    21:01-21:06

    Because we're closing this series, but you're still going to be reading Proverbs.

    And I want you to see Proverbs for what it is.

    It is a talk from your heavenly Father.

    21:15-21:21

    It's like your heavenly Father, your heavenly Dad, sitting down and teaching you, for example, about work ethic.

    21:21-21:23

    Like Proverbs 10.4, right?

    21:24-21:41

    Proverbs 10.4 says, "A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich." Do you see that? It's the father sitting down and saying to his daughter, "Listen, you need to work hard, and when you do, you'll earn.

    21:41-21:42

    You'll succeed.

    21:43-21:48

    But listen, honey, if you refuse to work, You're going to be poor.

    21:50-21:52

    That's dad advice from a heavenly Father.

    21:52-21:56

    Walking wisely blesses you, but if you refuse God's Word, you're only hurting yourself.

    21:58-22:01

    We see dad teaching about how to get along with the neighbors.

    22:02-22:16

    Another example, Proverbs 11.12 says, "Whoever belittles his neighbor lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent." It's dad sitting down with his son.

    And he says, "Do you see some character flaws "with your neighbor?" "Well, just keep your mouth shut, okay?

    22:27-22:32

    "Because if you go after your neighbor about that, "it's just not going to go well for you.

    22:32-22:34

    "You've got to live next door to these people.

    22:34-22:38

    "Do you really want to offend them and tick them off?

    22:38-22:44

    "What good comes from insulting your neighbor?" and dad talk to their heavenly Father.

    22:47-22:51

    We get a teaching from dad about handling money.

    22:51-22:56

    Proverbs 11.24, "One gives freely, yet grows all the richer.

    22:57-23:02

    Another withholds what he should give and only suffers one." You see the two sons in the verse?

    23:02-23:03

    You see them?

    23:04-23:14

    It's dad sitting down with his son saying, "Look, let me explain to you how God economics works, because it works different than people think it does, son.

    23:15-23:17

    God says if you give it away, you're going to get richer.

    23:18-23:21

    But if you hoard for yourself, you're going to be in want.

    23:22-23:23

    That's God's economics.

    23:25-23:29

    In other words, son, walking wisely blesses you, but if you refuse God's Word, you're only hurting yourself.

    23:32-23:34

    We get a dad talk about friends.

    23:35-23:36

    Friends.

    23:38-23:42

    Verse 13.20 says, "Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise.

    23:43-23:47

    The companion of fools will suffer harm." See the two sons there?

    23:48-23:49

    The son of understanding, the son of rebellion?

    23:50-23:56

    Here again we have Heavenly Dad sitting down and saying, "Listen, son.

    23:58-23:58

    Listen, son.

    24:00-24:02

    You act like the people that you hang out with.

    24:03-24:03

    You want to be wise?

    24:04-24:06

    Well, then you find some wise people and hang out with them.

    24:07-24:10

    If all your friends are idiots, guess what you are?

    24:13-24:15

    If all your friends are idiots, guess what you are?

    24:16-24:18

    Yes, you're an idiot.

    24:20-24:23

    You see in Proverbs, a dad talks regarding contentment.

    24:25-24:30

    Proverbs 14.30 says, "A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh.

    24:30-24:35

    Envy makes the bones rot." You see dad sitting down with his daughter.

    24:37-24:40

    "Honey, honey, listen to me.

    24:40-24:42

    It doesn't matter what you have.

    24:43-24:47

    What matters is your attitude towards what you have.

    24:47-24:54

    Because if you can be content, if you can have a tranquil heart, you're going to have a happy life.

    24:56-25:03

    And if you're constantly looking around at what other people have and wishing you had what everybody else, you will rot from the inside out.

    25:03-25:10

    Honey, I don't want that for you." The last one.

    25:13-25:15

    What do you do when you really mess up?

    25:16-25:19

    What do you do when you really mess up?

    25:20-25:22

    Well, back to Proverbs 28, verse 13.

    25:23-25:39

    It says, "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy." And this proverb applies not only our relationship with God, but it applies to our relationship with other people too.

    25:42-25:43

    We teach this to our kids, right?

    25:43-25:49

    If you do wrong, admit it, and we'll deal with it gently.

    25:51-25:56

    But if you do wrong and you try to hide it, we're going to deal with it not so gently.

    25:59-26:01

    This is also true with our Heavenly Father.

    26:03-26:15

    If you're living in sin, and somehow you've deceived yourself into thinking that you're concealing it by avoiding going to God with it, you are not going to prosper.

    26:17-26:18

    And you're only hurting yourself.

    26:20-26:35

    But, God as a perfect parent wants you to do what you What do you want your kids to do when they mess up?

    26:36-26:38

    Parents, what do you want your kids to do when they mess up?

    26:39-26:42

    Come and tell me about it, and we'll deal with it, right?

    26:45-26:46

    Church, God says the same thing.

    26:47-26:48

    Look, when you mess up, don't run from Me.

    26:50-26:50

    Run to Me.

    26:52-26:54

    Just bring it to Me. Confess it.

    26:54-26:56

    The word "confess," that just means you agree with God.

    26:56-26:57

    Like, yeah, you know what, God?

    26:57-26:59

    I was wrong to do that.

    27:00-27:03

    You said it's wrong, and I agree it was wrong, but I'm telling you, I messed up.

    27:05-27:06

    And forsake.

    27:08-27:09

    Abandon your sin.

    27:10-27:11

    Confess and forsake.

    27:13-27:14

    That's biblical repentance.

    27:16-27:26

    God says when you do that, when you come to Me, and you have a heart to deal with your sin, God says you're going to receive mercy.

    27:28-27:30

    Your sin has kept you from coming to God.

    27:33-27:35

    You need to run to Him today.

    27:37-27:39

    Say, "Lord, I messed up.

    27:40-27:41

    I don't want to live like this anymore.

    27:42-27:59

    And today I am confessing and forsaking my sin and I'm crying out for the mercy that You provided through Jesus Christ." See, when Jesus Christ died on the cross, was to take your sin away.

    28:00-28:04

    And He's just waiting for you to come and receive Him.

    28:06-28:10

    If you haven't taken that step, today's the day.

    28:12-28:15

    Your other option is refusing.

    28:17-28:26

    Your other option is leaving here saying, "I am so glad that sermon series is over." Because that was like two months of being really uncomfortable.

    28:28-28:29

    Glad it's done.

    28:31-28:33

    And in that case, you've hardened your heart.

    28:33-28:36

    What did He say happens when you harden your heart?

    28:37-28:38

    You fall into calamity.

    28:38-28:40

    Nothing good is going to come from that.

    28:41-28:42

    Sin never brings success.

    28:44-28:48

    So, disregard it.

    28:49-28:50

    Keep flirting with that affair.

    28:52-28:54

    Refuse to overlook personal offenses.

    28:55-28:56

    Make everything an issue, please.

    28:57-29:01

    Every little thing anybody says, just get completely, irrationally ticked off by that.

    Would you?

    29:05-29:08

    And make sure that you jump into fights that have nothing to do with you.

    Just look for people that are arguing, and you don't even have to know anything about the subject.

    Just jump right on in there.

    Be lazy at work.

    See if you can have a little contest with yourself.

    "What's the minimum amount of work I can do every week?

    29:25-29:27

    Can I lower that every week?" Go ahead.

    Just gorge yourself with food, right?

    29:32-29:34

    Nothing shuts this pie hole but pie.

    Just keep stuffing yourself, and I don't need to eat this much, but I'm not legalistic, so, you know, calorie it up.

    Spend how you want.

    29:49-29:49

    You know what?

    29:50-29:51

    Nobody tells me how to spend my money.

    I'm going to buy whatever I want.

    29:53-29:55

    I'm going to put everything on credit cards.

    You're only hurting yourself.

    Right?

    Because blessed is the one who fears the Lord always.

    But whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

    Do you understand that?

    Are you a son with understanding?

    Are you a daughter with understanding?

    Do you get why loving Christ means keeping His commandments?

    Then by the power of His Holy Spirit.

    Let's walk wisely.

    30:36-30:37

    Let's pray.

    30:38-30:41

    Father in Heaven, we thank You for Your Word.

    30:43-30:46

    And oh Father, we've all been guilty of disregarding You.

    30:48-30:51

    I pray that we would see your word with fresh eyes.

    30:51-31:00

    There's so many people that think, church is about a bunch of rules, and the Bible's about a bunch of rules, and God, give us eyes to see your work for what it is.

    31:01-31:09

    It's you, our perfect heavenly Father, sitting down with us as your children, and saying, listen, I want you to succeed in life.

    31:09-31:12

    I don't want you to ruin your life.

    31:12-31:14

    I don't want to see you go into calamity.

    31:14-31:15

    So don't harden your heart.

    31:17-31:18

    God, You have all knowledge.

    31:20-31:23

    Let us receive Your Word for what it is.

    31:25-31:27

    Your commands are not burdensome.

    31:30-31:34

    They're for our good always, as Moses told Israel.

    31:37-31:42

    We obey, Father, because we love You, as Jesus taught us.

    31:45-31:50

    Father, give us fresh eyes to see your Word that way.

    31:52-31:54

    And see you as a dad who loves us.

    31:58-31:59

    Father, I pray that you grant us repentance.

    Only your Spirit can soften our heart.

    Father, for those of us in this room, who are going to be listening to this podcast all over the world, Those of us who have hardened our hearts, Father, we confess that to You.

    Grant us repentance, Father. Grant us by Your Spirit the ability to forsake that sin, to walk by the power of Your Holy Spirit, to walk in wisdom.

Introduction:

Proverbs 18:19 - A brother offended is harder to win than a strong (walled) city, And contentions are like the bars of a castle.

Helping YOU to overcome the debilitating effect of accumulated offense.

The nature of offense

Luke 17:1 - And he said to his disciples, "Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come!

To not be offended is impossible!

The author of offense

John 10:10 - The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

Satan - ministry of death, theft and destruction

The path of offense

Hebrews 12:14,15 - Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no "root of bitterness" springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled

ROOT OF BITTERNESS - GOTCHA!

The remedy for offense

Matthew 5:23-25 - So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.

Matthew 18:15-17 - If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Corinthians 10:4,5 - and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ. Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

    Today I've come with a very express purpose.

    As led by the Lord through the inner working of the Holy Spirit, I come today to teach you and exhort you concerning the subject of tearing down the wall of offense in your life.

    I want to make it clear I'm not here to give a nice talk.

    I'm not here simply to be a fill-in while Jeff is away.

    I'm not here to make some suggestions of some things you ought to do someday.

    I have come to open the door for you so that you can do some much needed business with God and begin doing that today.

    There's no doubt, many people in this room are primarily defined by their past offenses, by their hurts, and by their failures.

    03:11-03:14

    Each day is weighed down by the heaviness of the past.

    03:14-03:17

    Life becomes burdensome and incarcerating.

    03:18-03:21

    And when that happens, the joy is not visible.

    03:21-03:28

    And see, when that happens, you become handicapped in reaching the full potential which God has in mind for you.

    03:29-03:33

    So let me remind you here at the beginning, the world defines you by your past.

    03:34-03:36

    God does not.

    03:36-03:41

    Today's message, "Tearing Down the Wall of Offense," to teach you how to escape from your self-made prison.

    03:42-03:45

    Teach you to live freely by God's amazing grace.

    03:45-03:47

    Now where did I get that idea?

    03:47-03:50

    It comes from one verse in the book of Proverbs.

    03:51-03:54

    Proverbs 18:19.

    03:54-04:08

    And it says this, "A brother offended is harder to win than a strong city, and contentions are like the bars of a castle." It says once a person is offended, it's hard to get them back.

    04:08-04:10

    It's hard to become a friend again.

    04:10-04:12

    It's hard to make amends.

    04:12-04:16

    Because when we're offended, we do what strong cities do.

    04:16-04:19

    Back in the times of the Bible, cities would build walls.

    04:20-04:21

    And they would have gates.

    04:21-04:24

    So only those that they permitted to come in and out can come in and out.

    04:25-04:27

    And when we carry a fence in our life, we're like that.

    04:27-04:29

    We build a wall around ourself.

    04:29-04:32

    It starts out, we think, we're just protecting ourselves.

    04:33-04:46

    But we pick up one brick of a fence and another brick of a fence and another brick of a fence, We start to lay the groundwork for that wall, and instead of protecting ourselves, we seal ourselves in rather than simply keeping those out of our lives.

    04:46-04:52

    And it takes over our life, and our whole life is defined by our reaction to offense.

    04:53-05:08

    The Proverb goes on and it says, "And the contentions are like the bars of a castle." It means the more you talk about it, the more you strive to fix it, the more you argue about it, that person just steps from behind the wall they've built, moves into the castle, and starts putting bars on the windows of the castle.

    And once again, they think they're finding a safe zone, but they're actually destroying their own life.

    05:15-05:24

    So I see my job today as this, helping you to overcome the debilitating effect of accumulated offense.

    05:24-05:25

    Now think about that.

    05:25-05:30

    If you allow offense to accumulate in your life, it will debilitate you.

    05:30-05:32

    It will turn you into somebody you're not.

    05:32-05:46

    You won't even really like yourself, but you'll be so busy defending because you're so justified because of what happened to you, you're more willing to live that way than be free in Jesus Christ.

    05:47-05:48

    So look up here for a moment.

    05:49-05:51

    Let's say I'm a regular part of this fellowship.

    05:51-06:00

    And as some get together, I notice as the event goes on, your behavior changes and you're acting differently at the end than you were at the beginning.

    06:01-06:02

    You just aren't laughing as much.

    06:02-06:05

    There seems to be a heaviness about your life.

    06:06-06:11

    And if I came up to you and said, "Are you offended?" What's the normal answer to that question?

    06:11-06:16

    "No, I'm not offended. No, no, no, I'm not offended.

    06:16-06:23

    I just..." We have all kinds of ways of unexplaining offense.

    06:24-06:31

    See, one of the greatest lies in the church is, "I'm not offended." And I think we need to reckon with that. We need to deal with that.

    06:31-06:56

    Now, if you didn't like me asking, "Are you offended?" And I said, "Well, are you mad?" "No, I'm not mad. I'm just hurt." "So are you hurt?" "Well, not really. We just don't want to admit it, but I want you to understand that I think perfect synonyms for offense are'mad' and 'hurt.'" So who's not been hurt? Who's not been upset? Who's not been mad?

    Who's not been offended?

    06:59-07:00

    Now, see these bricks?

    07:00-07:04

    I want each one of these bricks to represent a fence in our lives.

    07:05-07:05

    And this bag?

    07:07-07:08

    This is my hurt bag.

    See, every time I allow an offense to remain in my life, I take it everywhere I go.

    07:14-07:16

    This is what my dad did to me.

    07:17-07:18

    This is what that coach said.

    07:19-07:22

    This is what that idiot guy at church did last Sunday.

    07:22-07:25

    And see, everywhere we go, we have to take it.

    07:26-07:32

    So I want you to be thinking about in your life, you know, how many hurts are in your hurt bag?

    07:32-07:34

    Now see, at night, we get the bricks out.

    07:34-07:36

    When we're resting, we get the bricks out.

    07:36-07:40

    When we're in our safe zone, we get the bricks out, and we start building our wall.

    07:40-07:41

    And we just add to it.

    07:41-07:43

    And then when we leave in the morning, see?

    07:44-07:56

    We get out there and we put them all back in the hurt bag and they go everywhere with us because if people just understood what happened to us, they would understand why I have to filter my life through every offense.

    07:57-07:59

    Now, we rehearse those offenses.

    08:00-08:04

    That's how we remain justified in our attitude and our behavior.

    08:04-08:10

    But just like the Proverbs says, the offended one is hard to win back.

    08:11-08:14

    And that's because he or she is just trying to protect themself.

    08:14-08:16

    That's all they meant to do.

    08:16-08:18

    But he actually is hemming himself in.

    08:19-08:25

    And the more you contend with him, he adds bars to the windows of that self-made prison.

    So, let me ask you, who hurt you?

    I mean, dads do it.

    And brothers do it and sisters do it and uncles do it and wives do it and husbands do it and teachers do it and lovers do it and ex-lovers do it and bosses do it and preachers do it and enemies do it.

    08:41-08:42

    Uncles and cousins do it.

    08:42-08:43

    Neighbors do it.

    08:44-08:44

    Exes do it.

    08:45-08:46

    Kids do it. Parents do it.

    08:47-08:52

    And sometimes we have a big brick in our bag for God because He offended us.

    08:52-08:53

    didn't come through.

    08:53-09:00

    And sometimes there's a brick named self in that bag because you can't get past the offense of your own life.

    09:00-09:07

    So I'm asking that as I speak to you today, that you would consider to begin unstacking the wall.

    09:08-09:11

    That you would consider emptying the bag.

    09:11-09:12

    Now here's some motivation.

    09:13-09:22

    Whose offense in your life is stronger than your ability to agree with God to do the right thing today.

    09:23-09:25

    Don't you think the Lord wants you to be free?

    09:25-09:29

    Don't you think the Lord doesn't want you to carry the offense any longer?

    09:30-09:40

    And if you allow what happened to you as a child or in your dating life or in your career, or however it was, if you allow that to define you, then you're not allowing God to define you.

    09:41-09:50

    And you know, it's interesting, the person who offended you, it might have been 40 years ago, but they control your thoughts and your attitudes every day.

    09:50-09:52

    Do you ever think about that?

    09:52-09:56

    They might already be dead, but they have the ability to control you.

    09:56-10:10

    Someone once said to me, "You know, you will become just like the person who's offended you most if you don't let God change your life, deal with the offense." And it's so true.

    10:11-10:17

    The one for whom we have the most resentment has the ability to control and we become just like them.

    10:18-10:31

    John Bevere, who wrote a book called "Debate of Satan," says this, "Do not be afraid to allow the Holy Spirit to reveal any unforgiveness or bitterness in your life.

    The longer you hide it, the stronger it will become, and the harder your heart will grow.

    10:38-10:40

    Stay tender-hearted.

    10:40-11:07

    How? Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice, and be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God and Christ forgave you." Now I want you to do something. I want you to take your notes right now, and I'd like you to put the top three offenders, write them down.

    If you don't want to put their names, put their initials.

    11:10-11:13

    Who has offended you? Who has hurt you?

    11:13-11:17

    And you have a brick in your hurt bag because of them.

    11:17-11:34

    If you don't want to write a name or their initial, put down a circumstance that has been life-altering, that says, "You know what? I never meant for that to define me, but it does define me." So take just a moment and list your top three offenses or offenders.

    11:35-11:50

    Almighty Father, just now I, Father, prepare to bring this congregation before You, that You, Lord, might begin to do surgery in one or two lives here, or maybe more than that, who knows.

    11:51-11:52

    But Father, some will not hear.

    11:53-11:55

    We just know that's the nature of the Word.

    11:55-11:58

    Others will be penetrated to the heart.

    11:59-12:01

    Some will be quickened from the dead.

    12:02-12:12

    I pray that you would give people the courage to hear what you say, so that they might find freedom, no longer being controlled by the hurt and offense in their life.

    12:13-12:17

    So let's talk today, first of all, about the nature of offense.

    12:17-12:28

    In the book of Luke chapter 17, Jesus said this, this is in the King James Version, "It is impossible but that offenses will come, but woe to him through whom they come.

    12:28-12:36

    It were better for him that a millstone were hanged around his neck and he cast into the sea that he should offend one of these little ones.

    12:37-12:38

    Take heed for yourselves.

    12:38-13:02

    If your brother trespasses against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him; and if he trespasses against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, 'I repent,' thou shalt forgive him." I just want you to see that Jesus said this, "To not be offended is impossible." So understand, if you say, "I carry no offense.

    I've never been hurt, I've never been offended." It's not true.

    13:05-13:11

    Because Jesus said it is impossible for you not to be offended.

    13:11-13:13

    So let's get honest for a moment.

    13:13-13:15

    Raise your hand if you've ever been offended.

    13:15-13:18

    Okay, that would be everybody here I would suppose.

    13:19-13:23

    I won't ask you to raise your hand, but whose life has been defined by the offense?

    13:23-13:27

    Who continues to allow the offense to shape your life?

    13:27-13:35

    See, the Bible says that when offense happens, we should deal with it, and deal with it quickly, and deal with it over and over again.

    13:35-13:36

    That's what Jesus said.

    13:37-13:51

    And so we think, "Yeah, I tried that once, but it didn't work." But He said, "Even if it happens seven times in a day, and the person says, 'Forgive me,' He says, 'Forgive them.'" So how many of you ladies have had to forgive your husband more than seven times in one day?

    13:52-13:53

    You don't need to raise your hand.

    13:53-13:56

    Or forgive your kids more than seven times in one day.

    13:57-14:01

    See, the point is you don't want to let the offense build.

    14:01-14:03

    It will poison your life.

    14:03-14:16

    And you let it in once and think, "I can handle that." And then twice and think, "I can handle that." And then three times and think, "It's okay. It's only three offenses that I'm carrying." Pretty soon it seems normal.

    14:16-14:19

    But the offenses are robbing you of the freedom.

    14:19-14:24

    And they're changing you from the person you're meant to be into somebody you don't really want to be.

    14:24-14:27

    Early on, we all learned this lesson.

    14:28-14:34

    "If I don't look out for me, nobody else will." And that's how it all starts.

    14:34-14:38

    Now see, sometimes the offenses in our lives are totally unjustified.

    14:38-14:40

    There wasn't even a rhyme or a reason.

    14:40-14:46

    Somebody actually came upon you in such a way, you had nothing to do with what they did to you.

    14:46-14:49

    And that's a big offense to let go of, I understand that.

    14:49-14:54

    But there's no freedom if you let your life be shaped by somebody that came against you in that fashion.

    14:54-14:59

    Sometimes people's offenses are somewhat justified, because you acted one way and they acted another.

    15:00-15:05

    But instead of making reconciliation, you see, you just each go your own way, and that's how you handle.

    15:05-15:07

    But that's not what the Bible would say.

    15:08-15:11

    So I look at offense like this. I have a few comparisons.

    15:11-15:14

    First of all, offense is like a pyramid business.

    15:15-15:21

    See, you buy in, and then you recruit someone to help you carry the burden of your offense.

    15:21-15:24

    Now, moms and daughters are the best at that, in my opinion.

    15:24-15:26

    See, a daughter gets offended and her mom takes her side.

    15:27-15:30

    Or mom gets offended and she raises her daughter to take her side.

    15:30-15:35

    And then they both have the same view and attitude, all shaped by the offense of another person.

    15:35-15:51

    But when you get in this pyramid business, you get offended, you recruit somebody to carry your offense with you, and they go out and recruit two more, and they recruit two more, and they recruit two more, and pretty soon we have a whole generation of people in one family who are really defined by their offense.

    15:52-15:56

    And so there can be a line of angry men, a line of controlling women.

    15:56-16:03

    But if you could trace it back, it all came through the hurt, the offense of one person.

    16:03-16:08

    See, we just start building the wall to protect ourselves, but the protection turns into control.

    16:08-16:12

    And the control turns from self-control to control everybody around me.

    16:13-16:19

    And what appears to be security is actually a great big loud signal of insecurity.

    16:19-16:20

    Did you ever notice that?

    16:20-16:25

    Sometimes the people that want to run everything down deep, they're very insecure.

    16:25-16:28

    And it's because they've not dealt with all that's happened.

    16:28-16:30

    So a fence can be like a pyramid scheme.

    16:30-16:32

    A fence is like the compound interest of a debtor.

    16:33-16:34

    I don't know if you've ever done a payday loan.

    16:34-16:35

    I never have.

    16:36-16:37

    But I would never do one, I don't think.

    16:38-16:43

    But it seems like with a compound interest of a payday loan, you continue to pay even after you pay.

    16:43-16:45

    And you pay again and again and again.

    16:45-16:46

    And as soon as you pay it, it's due again.

    16:47-16:48

    And that's how it is with a fence.

    16:48-16:56

    if you only partially deal with it, it comes back over and over and over and over again, and it will drive you into spiritual bankruptcy.

    16:56-17:00

    Just like that accumulated compound interest of a debtor.

    17:00-17:08

    And then I say, "A fence is like a ghost of yesterday, reminding you every day that you're in bondage." It's haunting.

    17:09-17:11

    See, you say, "Why me?

    17:11-17:18

    Why do things like this keep happening?" It's because we continue to add bricks to our bag or building our wall.

    17:19-17:23

    When a fence grows, we have a tendency to project an old situation into a new one.

    17:24-17:31

    It seems that nothing ever changes. Everything works like it did in the past, but it's because we built our own prison by a lack of forgiveness.

    17:31-17:39

    You see, when your husband reminds you of your dad, and you transfer what happened to you at home by your dad to your husband, he doesn't get a second chance.

    17:40-17:58

    And man, you know, if something your wife does reminds you of the hurt of a past relationship, suddenly she becomes somebody And I find oftentimes with men, it's their own hurt, their own offense that they're really angry at, but they take it out on those closest to them.

    17:58-18:01

    So here's a little story for you.

    18:01-18:08

    There were two men on their way to work, separate cars, both passed the same driveway of the same house.

    18:09-18:12

    At the end of that driveway, there was a fishing boat for sale.

    18:12-18:14

    And the fishing boat had a sign.

    18:14-18:21

    I mean, the boat was there, the trailer, the motor, the vest, the fishing poles, all the gear, everything you needed.

    18:21-18:34

    And the sign said, "Take it all for $3,000." So both of those men drove past that boat, got to work, sat down at their desk, and they began to dream about how great it would be to have that boat for $3,000.

    18:35-18:38

    Now, one of the men was zero in debt.

    18:38-18:43

    The other man was already $25,000 in debt.

    18:43-18:48

    So I have a question to ask you. Which one of those men would be the most likely to go out and borrow the money to buy that boat?

    18:49-18:51

    The fellow that's already in debt. Why?

    18:51-18:54

    Because if I'm 25,000 in debt, what's 28?

    18:54-18:56

    And if I can consolidate, I get a free boat.

    18:57-18:59

    I got to make payments anyhow. So what's the difference?

    19:00-19:03

    But the guy that has zero debt, he says, "No way.

    19:04-19:06

    I worked so hard to get out of debt, there's no way.

    19:06-19:14

    As much as I want that boat, I will not borrow the money to buy it." Now translate that from finances to the debt of offense.

    19:14-19:18

    See, if you're already ticked off at 25 people, what's 26?

    19:19-19:27

    I mean, if you already have sealed off this person, and this person, and this person, and you've built that brick wall, and this is that person, that person, what's one more brick?

    19:28-19:33

    But if you get out of this offense debt, the first offense really hurts.

    19:34-19:38

    And you want to deal with it, and you want to deal with it now, so it doesn't accumulate.

    19:39-19:45

    So it is with our debt offense. We have to handle those offenses one by one.

    19:45-19:49

    So there's a word about the nature of offense.

    19:49-19:53

    Let's say something now about the author of offense.

    19:54-19:59

    God is not the author of offense. Satan is.

    20:00-20:06

    When Jesus was speaking about He being the Good Shepherd, He says this in John 10.10.

    20:06-20:12

    He says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

    20:12-20:22

    I came that they may have life and life abundantly." Now, if you're living under the weight of offense, you're not living the abundant life.

    20:22-20:26

    God's not in control, the devil has you snowed under.

    20:26-20:32

    See, Jesus said the ministry of Satan is this, death, theft, and destruction.

    20:33-20:36

    Everything God is for, Satan is against.

    20:36-20:43

    Unity, peace, joy, love, kindness, Satan's against it.

    20:43-20:46

    Great marriage, the devil wants to destroy your marriage.

    20:47-20:52

    A godly self-image, the devil wants you to take your own life, not live for God.

    20:52-20:58

    Churches that function in unity, he wants to cause confusion and destruction and turn people against one another.

    20:58-21:03

    And so you see, He's a roaring lion waiting to devour.

    21:04-21:07

    He masquerades as an angel of light.

    21:07-21:12

    He's a master deceiver and the father of all lies.

    21:13-21:18

    Now I say this, sometimes in the church, we don't give the devil enough credit.

    21:19-21:21

    And by that I mean, we want to blame ourselves.

    21:22-21:23

    We want to blame each other.

    21:24-21:25

    We want to blame the circumstances.

    21:26-21:28

    We want to blame the preacher.

    21:28-21:30

    We ought to be blaming the devil.

    21:30-21:33

    The Apostle Paul says this in Ephesians 6.

    21:35-21:52

    He says, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." Do you believe that?

    21:52-21:56

    I think oftentimes we left the theology of the devil at our children's bedside.

    21:57-22:04

    We kneel down and we pray with them and say, "God, I want to be a good boy. I don't want the devil to have way in my life.

    22:04-22:09

    I want to follow Jesus, not the devil." And that's as far as our theology about Satan goes.

    22:10-22:16

    You believe in God, you believe in angels, then you necessarily need to believe in Satan and you need to believe in demons.

    22:17-22:18

    They are just as real.

    22:19-22:26

    I consider that while I'm preaching today, there's an army of angels and an army of demons warring against what you're able to hear or not hear today.

    22:27-22:30

    This present darkness is a reality.

    22:31-22:36

    And so the author of the offense comes from the devil himself.

    22:37-22:44

    To be controlled by offense plays right into the hand of killing and stealing and destroying.

    22:45-22:50

    Jesus said, "I came to bring abundant life." Satan has come to take it away.

    22:51-22:56

    And so we've learned a little bit about the nature of offense, and then the author of offense.

    22:56-22:59

    Let me now talk about the path of offense.

    23:01-23:17

    If you have lived your life carrying around that hurt bag, building that wall and trying to be justified, I want you to understand the accumulation of offense always takes everyone down the same path.

    23:18-23:19

    It's not unique.

    23:19-23:22

    You don't end up somewhere someone else doesn't.

    23:23-23:35

    See, in trying to prove a point, believing they're getting even, convincing themselves they have full control, they are only getting bitter as the months and the years pass.

    23:36-23:43

    That's where accumulated offense will take you every time to bitterness.

    23:45-23:56

    Hebrews 12 verses 14 and 15 say this, "Pursue peace with all people and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

    23:56-24:14

    Looking carefully, lest anyone fall short of the grace of God, (listen) lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by it many have become defiled." And so, you would see that you're a person who has a special case.

    24:15-24:22

    That not forgiving, not being able to let go, by owning the offense which begins to own you.

    24:23-24:40

    You think somehow you'll be able to handle it, and the Bible would say, "No, you're going to become bitter." See, the root of bitterness is the "gotcha." That's where the devil says, "Aha! I finally got you." Satan wins when you become bitter.

    24:41-24:44

    Your life is dedicated to bitterness and becomes defiled.

    24:45-24:46

    You started out with the best intentions.

    24:47-24:56

    You were a lovely person, but now you find yourself unfulfilled, resentful, full of jealousy and anger, and you're the last one to notice, but everyone else does.

    24:57-25:05

    You're somewhat of a bitter person, and people tend to avoid you and work around you because they don't want the poison to spread.

    25:05-25:07

    And by the way, it is contagious.

    25:08-25:11

    John Bevere says this, "Bitterness is a root.

    25:11-25:17

    If roots are nursed, watered, protected, fed, and given attention, They increase in depth and strength.

    25:17-25:20

    If not dealt with quickly, roots are hard to pull up.

    25:20-25:23

    The strength of the offense will continue to grow.

    25:23-25:31

    We are therefore exhorted not to let the sun go down on our hurt, on our anger, on our wrath, on our offense.

    25:32-25:44

    Now instead, the fruit of righteousness being produced, we will see a harvest of anger and resentment and jealousy and hatred and strife and discord.

    25:45-25:50

    And Jesus said, "These are the works of the flesh." These are the evil fruits of the works.

    25:50-25:53

    Now pride keeps you from dealing with truth.

    25:54-25:55

    And see, that's where we're headed.

    25:56-25:57

    Why wouldn't you unpack your bag?

    25:58-26:00

    Why wouldn't you unstack your wall today?

    26:01-26:02

    It's because of pride.

    26:02-26:03

    No matter how you add it up.

    26:04-26:11

    No matter if you say, "But my situation was different." No matter if you say, "Well, if you just understood." Pride will keep you from dealing with this hurt.

    26:12-26:13

    It distorts your vision.

    26:13-26:17

    You never change when you convince yourself that everything is fine.

    26:17-26:19

    Everything is not fine.

    26:19-26:31

    Many people, and some people here, for decades, you have owned this offense, and now it owns you, and life would seem abnormal if you didn't have that hurt bag with you everywhere you go.

    26:31-26:32

    Pride hardens your heart.

    26:33-26:35

    It dims the eyes of your understanding.

    26:35-26:36

    It keeps you from having a change.

    26:38-26:39

    Repentance will set you free.

    26:40-26:45

    But see, when we're full of that hurt, that offense, we would believe we have no need to repent.

    26:45-26:46

    The world needs to repent.

    26:47-26:50

    The offender - the one who hurt me - needs to repent, but not me.

    26:51-26:54

    Pride causes you to view yourself as a victim.

    26:54-27:06

    And your attitude becomes, "I was mistreated and misjudged, therefore, I'm justified in my behavior." Because you believe you're innocent and falsely accused, you hold back forgiveness, though your true heart condition is hidden from you.

    27:06-27:10

    And finally this morning, let's talk about the remedy.

    27:10-27:12

    Here's what the Bible says in Matthew 5.

    27:14-27:29

    Jesus said this, "If you're offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift in front of the altar, go and be reconciled to your brother, then come and offer your gift.

    27:29-27:34

    Settle matters quickly with your adversary." So you know what that says?

    27:35-27:44

    It says, "If you've offended someone else and God brings it to mind, go reconcile with your brother." If you've been the offender, go make it right with the one you hurt.

    27:45-28:02

    If you come to church and God says, "You need to go make it right." It says, "Leave church and go make it right, then come back to church." And in Matthew 18, Jesus said, "If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault." just between the two of you.

    28:02-28:05

    If he listens to you, you've won your brother back.

    28:06-28:24

    If he will not listen, take one or two others along so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses." So that first verse said, "If you've offended someone, go make it right." The second verse says that if someone has offended you, go to him and make it right.

    28:25-28:26

    I always found that interesting.

    28:26-28:30

    It says, "You've been hurt? Go." You hurt somebody? Go.

    28:30-28:33

    Who's the first one to go? You, every time.

    28:33-28:36

    That's what the Bible says, if we're going to be the obedient Christians.

    28:37-28:46

    Now there in Matthew 18 it says, "Now if someone sinned against you, go make it right between you two." That should work. That's not very often practiced.

    28:47-28:49

    But if that doesn't work, get a few friends together.

    28:49-28:55

    Get some family, have a family meeting and say, "Let's work this thing out." And if that doesn't work, just tell it to the church.

    28:55-29:04

    It doesn't mean come up in front of the church and say, "Do you know what my wife did to me?" It means get the church together, let's pray about these things, let's work through these things together.

    29:05-29:07

    And so it's always your responsibility to go.

    29:08-29:12

    Now I realize that not every hurt can be dealt with.

    29:12-29:17

    Not every offense can be handled, because that might have been so long ago you've lost contact.

    29:17-29:19

    That person may be deceased, as I already said.

    29:20-29:22

    There are some hurts we have to deal with on an impersonal basis.

    29:22-29:24

    We have to yield it back to God.

    29:25-29:29

    We have to make our heart right with the Lord, and let Him make the difference.

    29:30-29:39

    In fact, the Bible says, "Never strive to avenge yourself." Because God, you see, is the one who makes it right in the end.

    29:39-29:43

    We never have to go and get revenge. It's never our role.

    29:44-29:47

    But listen to what Paul said in 2nd Corinthians chapter 10.

    29:48-30:06

    He said, "For though we walk in the flesh, we don't war according to the flesh." It says, "Though we're human like everybody else, we don't fight like everybody else, because the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for the pulling down of strongholds." Do you understand what that says?

    30:06-30:08

    The offense in your life becomes a stronghold.

    30:09-30:11

    It becomes the wall around the city of your life.

    30:12-30:14

    You think you're in control, but you're in jail.

    30:15-30:18

    And it says, "You don't fight these battles like the world fights these battles.

    30:19-30:21

    We don't call names. We don't sue one another.

    30:21-30:23

    We don't go after one another's reputation.

    30:23-30:27

    It says we deal with these things on a spiritual basis.

    30:27-30:41

    Listen, "casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God." Here's the key, "bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience to Christ." Every thought.

    30:42-30:51

    So when you're laying in bed at night and you start to think, "You know what? You know what I really think?" You bring that thought into captivity.

    30:52-30:56

    When you're fired up and angry, you bring every thought into captivity.

    30:56-31:02

    When you wish you could go back that 20 or 30 years and fight it out, you bring every thought into captivity.

    31:02-31:12

    That's what the Bible says, "Take every thought captive." And I'm so often reminded of the Apostle Paul having his thorn in the flesh.

    31:12-31:14

    We don't know exactly what that was.

    31:14-31:16

    Some say it was a physical malady.

    31:16-31:18

    Some say it was blindness to his eyes.

    31:18-31:22

    Why some say it was a person or group of people followed Him everywhere and tried to discredit Him.

    31:24-31:28

    But I'm saying that in your life, the thorn in your flesh could be the hurt.

    31:29-31:31

    It just never goes away.

    31:31-31:33

    You've prayed to God like He did. Take it away.

    31:34-31:49

    And when Paul said, "I prayed and I prayed and I prayed, three times I prayed, God take it away." God said, "No." He said, "My grace is sufficient for you." And that's where we have to get.

    31:51-31:57

    See, it may never be made right in the eyes of everybody who knows, or who doesn't know.

    31:58-32:04

    It's like this movie camera's rolling in our lives and at the end we're going to get in front of everybody and God's going to bring justification to our life.

    32:04-32:06

    That will happen at the time of judgment.

    32:07-32:11

    He will make everything right in His time and in His way.

    32:12-32:17

    But for now, what God told Paul is what we need to hear - grace.

    32:18-32:19

    Give it up.

    32:20-32:21

    Put it in the bucket of grace.

    32:22-32:24

    And God will get you through one day at a time.

    32:25-32:26

    You can be free.

    32:26-32:27

    You don't have to be burdened.

    32:27-32:30

    You don't have to be defined by all this hurt and offense in your life.

    32:31-32:32

    And you know what Paul went on to say?

    32:33-32:48

    He said, "So, I'll be all the more glad to boast about my weakness, because Christ's power rests upon me." for Christ's sake, I delight in my weakness." He said, "I welcome my need for God.

    32:49-32:50

    I delight in my weakness.

    32:50-32:52

    I delight in the insults.

    32:52-32:53

    I delight in the hardships.

    32:53-32:55

    I delight in the persecutions.

    32:55-33:04

    I delight in the difficulties, because when I'm weak, then I'm strong." Isn't that amazing?

    33:05-33:07

    Paul said, "Here I am, just as I am.

    33:07-33:09

    I don't have to prove anything to anybody.

    33:09-33:11

    I just need to walk with God.

    33:12-33:14

    If it comes against me, I just give it up.

    33:14-33:15

    Give it over to God.

    33:15-33:16

    And I can be a free man.

    33:18-33:27

    On Monday nights at North Street, I have a men's Bible study and I have two men in there right now who both come from addictive backgrounds and both spent time in prison.

    33:28-33:32

    And one night before the study began, they were just conversing.

    33:33-33:38

    And the one said, "You know, before I went to jail, I had no freedom.

    33:39-33:54

    But after I got to jail, where I had my freedom." And the other looked at him and said, "You know, that's right for me too." And it's so true until we get, you see, quiet, and we have to think about it, and we have to work through it, we'll never find our peace.

    When we're out there on the run, it's just go, go, go.

    33:57-33:59

    And we think we're free, but we're in prison.

    33:59-34:05

    And when we get settled down and go be free before the Lord, that's when we get free.

    So here are some things we've learned without offense today.

    We learned that offense will happen.

    34:14-34:15

    It's a reality. It does happen.

    34:16-34:17

    It's impossible that it won't happen.

    34:18-34:19

    You and I have been offended.

    34:20-34:22

    We've learned that we ought to deal with it quickly.

    34:23-34:25

    In fact, before the sun goes down.

    34:25-34:31

    The longest we should be hurt or angry is 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds.

    34:32-34:37

    If you got hurt right when the sun went down, Don't let it last any longer than the next day.

    34:38-34:39

    Deal with it quickly.

    34:40-34:42

    A zero balance is the goal.

    34:43-34:47

    Don't get into the offense debt.

    34:48-34:50

    It says reconcile with your brother.

    34:51-34:55

    Take every thought into captivity and turn it over.

    34:56-34:59

    Now I just want to ask you, are you ready to be set free?

    I have to tell you, freedom comes more than once.

    Now the initial freedom that we find, the freedom from sin, comes when we're born again.

    When Christ comes into our hearts and makes us brand new people.

    But we still have a tendency to pick up a fence and get burdened and burdened and burdened.

    And we need reminded to be set free.

    So I want to remind you that the weight you're carrying is unnecessary.

    Because Jesus carried all of the weight of all of our offenses on the cross.

    1 Peter 2:21-25 says this, now listen, "Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in His steps." He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.

    When they hurled insults at Him, He did not retaliate.

    When He suffered, He made no threats.

    36:12-36:17

    Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly.

    He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness.

    36:27-36:31

    By His wounds, you have been healed.

    I just want to ask you, do you believe that?

    Let me read that again.

    Christ suffered for you.

    Do you believe that?

    Leaving you example that you should follow in His steps.

    Do you believe that?

    So let's make it clear.

    You do not need to carry worry or failure or sin or guilt or offense.

    Jesus paid it all.

    37:31-37:39

    And for sure, you don't need to carry someone else's guilt or sin or failure or offense.

    37:39-37:42

    Jesus did it for them.

    37:44-37:52

    And so I just want to ask, was his life sufficient for the hurts and offenses in your life?

    37:53-37:54

    Yes or no?

    37:56-38:02

    If they were, you can leave here as a free man or a free woman today, unburdened.

    38:03-38:05

    You don't even need to take the empty hurt bag with you.

    38:06-38:07

    You don't need it anymore.

    38:08-38:13

    Jesus said to this in Matthew 11, And I want you to take it personally.

    38:15-38:23

    He said, "Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

    38:24-38:34

    Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I'm gentle and humble in heart, and you'll find rest for your souls.

    38:35-38:42

    For My yoke is easy and my burden is light." Do you believe that?

    38:44-38:53

    Would you let Him or would you let Him again begin to carry the load that weighs you down so heavily?

    38:55-39:08

    So I'm asking you today, will you take your hurt bag and will you take those bricks and put them in the blood-red bucket God's grace.

    39:09-39:11

    Say, I don't need that anymore.

    39:13-39:15

    I don't need that anymore.

    39:17-39:18

    I'm not taking that with me.

    39:20-39:25

    And all those offenses you rehearse every night to justify, it's okay for me to be hurt.

    39:25-39:26

    Nobody else should be.

    39:28-39:29

    I don't need that.

    39:30-39:31

    I don't want the wall.

    39:32-39:33

    I'm done.

    39:34-39:40

    I've given it all to the Lord because His grace is sufficient, and Jesus paid it all.

    39:42-39:43

    Let's pray.

    Almighty Father, we come before You this day, and I pray, Lord, that each one of us would be able to take inventory and to be real honest with ourselves.

    39:53-40:02

    In a time like this, if we've paid attention and the Spirit's spoken to our hearts, we begin to analyze and consider what needs to change.

    40:02-40:08

    But very quickly, Lord, we get our eyes off of self You know, my husband really needs to do that.

    40:09-40:10

    Or my wife really needs to do that.

    40:10-40:12

    Or my mother really needs to do that.

    40:13-40:19

    But Lord, today is not about someone's husband and not about someone's wife and not about someone's mother or any other relationship.

    40:19-40:23

    It's about each one here taking that deeper inner look.

    40:24-40:26

    I thank You, Father, that Jesus paid it all.

    40:27-40:35

    I thank You that we realize that a fence can have each one of us to build a wall around our lives just for protection.

    40:36-40:39

    But soon it becomes a prison, and potentially we become bitter.

    40:39-40:51

    I ask today, Father, that either right now or as we leave from this place, some people will be set free from the offense that has hemmed them in and weighs them down.

    40:52-40:57

    It's all in the name of Jesus, the One who bore it all, that we pray, Amen.
