    Well with all this love in the air and anniversaries and weddings, you know, I do a lot of counseling premarital counseling nearly postmarital counseling I've written two books on marriage and I hear a lot of things I read a lot of things but I'm gonna share with you one of the best piece of it pieces Of advice I've ever received if you're married This is gold and I heard this at a conference out in Chicago many years ago And I can't even remember the name of the guy putting on this particular workshop.

    I can't even remember what the subject of the workshop was, but I remember this piece of advice and always stuck with me.

    And he said this, "Sometimes you got to take the pitch." He said, "Here's what I mean by that." He goes, "You know, baseball, there are some batters that get up to bat and they have zero intention on swinging at that first pitch. They're not going to do it." Why?

    They're watching the pitcher.

    They're watching his movements, his mechanics.

    03:14-03:15

    They're watching the movement of the ball.

    All they want to do with that first pitch is just watch it go by, and they're just going to let it go, and they're not going to take a swing at it.

    And he said if you're married, that's good advice for you, because sometimes you need to just take the pitch.

    You don't have to swing at everything.

    Some of you look confused.

    And your husband will explain it to you on the way home.

    You get hit by a pitch, yeah.

    Some people, though, some people like to fight about everything.

    They like to fight about everything.

    You know, you pass them in the hall, you're like, "Hey, how are you doing?" Like, "What's that supposed to mean?

    Are you implying that I shouldn't be doing great?

    No, I just wondered. I knew you had a hard week last week.

    What's that supposed to mean?" Whoa, whoa.

    Let's switch to decaf, pal.

    But some people want to fight about everything.

    But then you have people on the other end of the spectrum and they won't fight about anything.

    You know what I mean?

    They won't fight about anything.

    04:39-04:45

    They're not passionate enough to care enough to fight about anything.

    But as we approach Jude for the next four weeks, this is what we're going to be talking about.

    There are some things that are absolutely worth fighting for.

    And you know what we call those types of things?

    05:02-05:04

    It's the hill to die on, right?

    05:05-05:44

    Mixing metaphors here, but you know sometimes I'll take the pitch Don't get a swing at that, but there are some things I Will not compromise I will die on this hill So look at Jude you're there now right verse 1 Introduction he says Jude a servant of Jesus Christ and brother of James stop there Jude was You're like, "What do you mean by half-brothers?" Well, Matthew 13, verse 55, tells us that Mary and Joseph had other kids after Jesus was born.

    Okay, so these kids would have been born to Mary and Joseph, and Jesus, the oldest, would have been born to Mary, but conceived by the Holy Spirit.

    Remember that story?

    So they weren't full brothers, they were half -brothers.

    James, as mentioned here, was another half-brother.

    He was a leader in the early church. You can read about him in Acts chapter 15 Galatians 1 I believe also talks about him But Jesus half-brothers didn't believe in Jesus Until after he resurrected according to Acts 1 14 So this half-brother that wrote This particular little teeny tiny letter that we're going to be looking at over the next four weeks His name is Jude at least that's the name he went by because The Hebrew version of his name would be Judah.

    And unfortunately, the Greek translation of his name would be Judas.

    So, do I have to explain to you why he went by Jude?

    Like, kind of a bummer having the same name as the guy that betrayed our Lord.

    He's like, "No, you can just call me Jude." But I love this, he describes himself as a servant of Jesus.

    You see some humility there.

    07:08-07:10

    He could have name dropped here, right?

    Like, hey, do you know who my brother is?

    07:13-07:14

    My brother is God.

    07:15-07:16

    He didn't do that though.

    07:16-07:18

    He said, I'm a servant of Jesus.

    07:19-07:25

    And that speaks to his relationship with the exalted Christ, right?

    07:25-07:46

    Well, the first four verses, the verses we're looking at today, and you gotta get this down because quite honestly, if you don't understand, and for some reason you tune out or you don't track with me, over the next half hour or so, the rest of the month isn't going to make much sense to you.

    Because these verses we're looking at today gives us the thesis of the letter.

    He's like, this is why I'm writing to you, and he's going to tell us in verse three, we'll look at here in a second, is to contend for the faith.

    He's making an appeal to the church to fight for the truth.

    08:08-08:11

    Listen, you are being called to war.

    08:12-08:16

    You're like, "Well, I don't feel like fighting, thank you very much." Well, that's the problem.

    It's too many people do not want to contend for the truth.

    08:23-08:27

    Too many people do not want to correct unbiblical teaching.

    08:27-08:31

    Too many people don't want to correct unbiblical beliefs.

    08:31-08:36

    Too many people don't understand what's at stake to allow someone to believe error.

    08:37-08:41

    Because too many people don't want to risk the relationship.

    08:42-08:48

    So too many people refuse to hold any line when it comes to the truth of God's Word.

    But you have to know in this church, this is the hill that I will die on.

    you have to get that conviction yourself.

    A lot of you might not realize this, but when this stage was being constructed, the plywood underneath, many people from our church that were involved in the work wrote Scripture verses all over the stage.

    Some of you remember that.

    And I love that because you know what that means?

    09:20-09:34

    That means when somebody is standing up here, whether it's me or Rich or whoever, We are literally standing on the Word of God in this position.

    You have to die on this hill.

    And this is why Jude wrote this letter.

    He says this is an appeal, verse 3.

    This is a call to arms.

    09:47-09:48

    This is rallying the troops.

    09:49-09:51

    This is firing up the troops for the battle ahead.

    09:52-09:53

    That's what we're looking at today.

    I had to ask Rich for the correct army terminology here.

    Like, what do you call it when you're about to send your troops into battle and you give them that pep talk?

    Because they probably don't call it a pep talk.

    So anyways, that's why it says, "The call to arms, your battle brief." Rich says battle brief is a good way to describe this type of speech, so we're going with that.

    The call to arms, this is your battle brief.

    So listen, I gotta tell you some things up front as we talk about contending for the faith because some of these things that I'm going to share with you are going to be hard to hear.

    And Jude certainly knew that.

    And that's why we have the introduction that we have.

    All right, so please tune in.

    This is your call to arms.

    10:39-10:42

    Number one, I gotta tell you this ahead of time, you will be secure.

    10:42-10:51

    Now we're gonna be dealing with people teaching wrong doctrine, we're gonna be dealing with people believing some false teaching, but look at the rest of verse one.

    10:51-11:00

    He says, "To those who are called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ." He answers some questions ahead of time.

    11:01-11:02

    Again, we're going to be getting into some hard stuff.

    11:03-11:17

    And it might be easier or tempting for us in the midst of this to be like, "Oh my goodness, with all these false teachings and all this bad doctrine, is it possible that there are some true believers in the church that are going to get kind of drawn into this and lose their salvation?" and no.

    11:18-11:20

    That's why he starts by talking about security.

    11:21-11:21

    Alright?

    11:22-11:29

    If you're a true, born-again believer in Jesus Christ, if you are, then nothing can change that.

    11:30-11:32

    And that's why he uses the words that he uses.

    11:32-11:33

    I'm going to go through this quickly.

    11:33-11:41

    First of all, he says "called." That means "chosen." That means if you're a born-again believer in Christ, it is because God chose you.

    11:42-11:46

    And you're like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, can you explain that?" No! I can't!

    11:48-11:49

    You know why I can't explain that?

    11:49-11:52

    Because He is God and I am not!

    11:53-11:53

    I am not!

    11:54-12:10

    Somehow, God chooses and God calls through the gospel and we respond by faith and God made the choice and we are responsible to respond and this is a mystery on how it all works and it makes sense to God, but it doesn't make sense to me because I am so not God.

    But you see, with the doctrine of election, There's one thing for sure.

    12:16-12:18

    We don't want to miss the forest for the trees here.

    12:19-12:21

    This teaches security, right?

    12:23-12:24

    Salvation is all God's doing.

    12:25-12:26

    And you should take great security in that.

    12:29-12:31

    Because if it was up to me to get saved, I wouldn't.

    12:32-12:33

    I couldn't.

    12:33-12:38

    And if it was up to me to keep my salvation, I couldn't do that either.

    12:40-12:41

    So he says, "You're called.

    12:41-12:46

    Rest assured that if you are a believer in Christ, it's because God chose you.

    12:46-12:46

    That's security.

    12:47-12:52

    Next he says, "Beloved, beloved, salvation is an act of love.

    12:53-12:55

    It's settled, it's decided, it cannot change.

    12:55-12:57

    I love this." And this could be a whole other sermon series.

    But the truth is, salvation is motivated by God's love.

    13:03-13:18

    But he says, last phrase there, you see, "kept for Jesus Christ." Some translations say, "kept by Jesus Christ." And that's actually a better term, "kept by Jesus Christ," because this is actually a military term.

    Kept.

    13:21-13:27

    It's a military term when a soldier was commissioned to guard something.

    13:28-13:32

    He was to guard it literally with his life.

    13:33-13:40

    Meaning, if you lose what is entrusted to you, you will die.

    13:41-13:42

    Literally.

    13:43-13:43

    That's what this word means.

    13:44-13:49

    So when that soldier kept that thing, how close do you think he kept it? Right?

    13:51-13:56

    So, this is glorious.

    13:57-14:02

    that if you belong to Jesus Christ, He's guarding you with His life.

    Jesus is literally guarding you.

    Many years ago, when Owen was much smaller, he's bigger than me now, but Owen was much smaller, and we were living up in Prospect.

    We were going for a walk, it was me and it was Owen, and it was our boxer Gordy, rest his soul, across the rainbow bridge or whatever.

    But we went for a walk, and I don't know why, Must be how I smell.

    14:28-14:32

    But every single time I go for a walk, I get attacked by dogs.

    14:33-14:34

    Does that happen to anybody else?

    14:36-14:36

    Nobody.

    Just me.

    Awesome.

    I get attacked by dogs every time I go for-- to this day, I get attacked by dogs.

    This particular day, Owen, like I said, he's real little.

    And Gordy, who was-- he's a boxer, but I mean, just not a mean bone in his body.

    So we're walking, and I see across the yard this enormous brown dog.

    15:00-15:01

    I don't even know what kind it was.

    15:01-15:04

    I think it was a grizzly bear retriever or something.

    15:04-15:11

    But it's like, [GROWLING] It's running at us, like growling and barking, and not like, oh, I'm friendly.

    15:11-15:12

    I want pets.

    15:12-15:15

    That wasn't the attitude that he was giving as he was coming.

    15:16-15:24

    So he's coming, and it was like, watching him run across the yard, time kind of slowed down, and my mind was racing.

    15:24-15:25

    What am I going to do?

    15:29-15:31

    Because this dog is enormous.

    15:32-15:34

    And this was my plan.

    15:34-15:38

    I grabbed Owen under my arm, and I turned towards the dog.

    15:39-15:40

    And this was my plan.

    15:41-15:46

    That dog is going to eat me and be full before he gets to my son.

    15:47-15:48

    That was my plan.

    15:48-15:49

    I didn't say it was a good plan.

    15:50-15:51

    I'm just saying that's the one that I went with.

    15:53-15:58

    Well, as the dog got closer, Gordy started jumping and dancing around, not growling, not barking.

    15:59-16:00

    He was just like juking and jiving.

    16:00-16:05

    He had some kind of Muhammad Ali thing going on, but without the punching, even though he's a boxer, so that's weird.

    But he was all dancing around, and the dog, this big dog stopped in his tracks and just stared at Gordy like, "Dude, what are you?" Because Gordy's just all dancing and juking and jumping, and the dog just turned around and walked away.

    I've never seen anything like it.

    16:23-16:31

    But my point of that is, in that moment, I was guarding my son with my life.

    16:31-16:36

    I'm like, if you're going to get to him, you're gonna have to go through me.

    16:37-16:41

    And that's the exact concept being used here for how Jesus keeps you.

    16:42-16:43

    He says, no, no, no, no.

    16:44-16:46

    You're gonna get one of my kids, pal.

    16:46-16:47

    You're gonna have to go through me.

    16:48-16:49

    That is awesome.

    16:50-16:51

    You're secure in your salvation.

    16:51-16:59

    The only way, the only way you can be lost is if someone more powerful than Jesus comes along and takes you from his hand.

    16:59-16:59

    That is awesome.

    17:01-17:03

    So you will be secure, all right?

    17:04-17:05

    Number two, you will be equipped.

    17:06-17:07

    You will be equipped.

    17:08-17:09

    Look at verse two.

    17:10-17:20

    It says, "May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you." This is provision for the battle ahead.

    17:21-17:25

    There are no guns or bombs or anything destructive because we are not called to fight like that.

    17:26-17:28

    This is a spiritual war.

    17:30-17:36

    And because this is a spiritual war that we are engaging in, it requires spiritual resources.

    17:38-17:43

    And he tells you what the spiritual resources are right here - mercy, peace, and love.

    Notice, because of the battle, God's not going to give you just enough And you have to understand, sometimes I think we can read through the Bible in kind of skim parts like this and not really understand the impact of why this is here.

    But mercy, peace, and love, the reason he starts with this is it sets the tone for the attitude that God's people need to carry in the context of the battle that he's about to present.

    Here's what I mean.

    when some people confront false teachers, or worse yet, when some people confront those who are affected by false teachers, who have been deceived by false teachers, some people go scorched earth on them.

    Do you know what I'm talking about?

    That you confronting the false teacher, this is the person that falls for some of the wrong teaching, it's just like, "How can you be so stupid?

    but you don't know what the Bible says?

    18:49-18:50

    How can you be so dumb?

    18:50-18:52

    And we're just gonna put them in their place, man.

    18:52-19:00

    We're just gonna, we're gonna run them out with our Bible knowledge and we're gonna, yeah, I showed him, yeah, he came with his stupid little doctrine.

    I mean, I just like took my MacArthur study Bible and I slapped him across the head with it because you don't bring that in here.

    And we're so proud of ourselves for thumping people.

    And I think that's why Jude starts here.

    19:16-19:17

    They're like, "Look, look, look, hey.

    19:19-19:25

    Yeah, we're going to be dealing with some people that are messing with God's Word, but hey, hey, hey, mercy, peace, and love.

    19:26-19:29

    These are the attitudes that we take into this, right?

    19:30-19:33

    This has to be our approach, like Jesus, right?

    19:34-19:34

    Like Jesus.

    19:37-19:43

    Oh God, please, multiply and harvest Bible chapel, mercy, peace, and love.

    There's a battle and we're going to be equipped.

    19:48-19:49

    God provides the resources.

    19:51-19:54

    Number three, you must understand the urgency.

    19:55-19:56

    This is your call to arms.

    19:57-20:13

    You must understand the urgency because as soon as we introduce the subject, there's probably some people here, some people watching the stream that are like, "Throw away sermon, nothing important to see here." like you totally missed the urgency.

    Look at verse 3.

    This is how urgent it is.

    20:18-20:19

    Look at this.

    20:19-20:36

    "Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints." Do you see how urgent this is?

    This is so urgent.

    20:38-20:43

    Here you have a man under inspiration of the Holy Spirit changed the course of his letter.

    20:44-20:52

    He said, "I was going to talk to you about salvation, but something much more important came up that I need to address with you." Something more urgent.

    He said, "I was going to talk to you about our common salvation." Now when he says "common salvation," he doesn't mean common like it's plentiful and everywhere.

    He just means that no one has more of it than anybody else, right?

    I don't have more salvation than you.

    21:11-21:13

    You don't have more salvation than me.

    21:13-21:24

    He says, "We all have the same amount." But obviously Jude got news of a more urgent matter, the gospel truth is under attack.

    Changed the whole course of his letter.

    21:27-21:30

    I want you to look at the wording here because it's very specific.

    21:31-21:37

    First of all, it says, "Content for the faith." The faith.

    21:37-21:40

    He's talking about specific contents.

    21:42-21:53

    In other words, he's not saying, "Just encourage people to be spiritual, man." He says, "No, I'm talking about the specific content of the gospel message." You've got to fight for that.

    The truth of salvation in Jesus Christ.

    21:56-21:57

    We can't mess with that.

    21:58-21:59

    You know what the gospel teaches?

    22:00-22:02

    The gospel teaches that God became a man.

    22:02-22:04

    Jesus Christ is God in the flesh.

    22:04-22:11

    and He dwelt among us, lived a sinless life, and He died on the cross, taking the penalty of our sins on Himself.

    22:11-22:14

    He rose from the dead to give us the promise of eternal life.

    22:15-22:16

    So what do we do with that?

    22:16-22:17

    We respond by faith.

    22:18-22:27

    We turn from our sin, say, "My way of living has been selfish, and self-destructive, and stupid, and I see what God has done for me in Christ.

    22:28-22:42

    I'm turning from my sin, and I'm receiving Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior." And the Bible says when you do, God's Holy Spirit comes and indwells you and empowers you to be the person that God has called you to be.

    That's the gospel message.

    22:44-22:47

    And Jude says there's a problem because there's some people messing with that.

    22:48-22:51

    He says it was once for all delivered to the saints.

    22:52-22:55

    The Greek there literally means done for all time.

    22:56-22:58

    In other words, there's no new faith.

    22:58-23:00

    There's no new doctrine.

    23:00-23:01

    There's no new revelation.

    23:01-23:18

    There's no new spiritual insights that someday somebody's going to stand up here and say, "You know what, church? This has been good for a while, but God last week showed me some new stuff that I can't wait to share with you, and you don't need your Bibles for the next four weeks." That's not true.

    Once for all. That's so important. Once for all.

    23:22-23:26

    This is the content. The gospel of Jesus Christ will not change.

    Jesus gave it to the apostles.

    23:30-23:33

    who gave it to us.

    23:33-23:37

    I just wonder sometimes, like in heaven, would we get a glimpse of that?

    Like to see the chain?

    23:41-23:50

    Like Jesus preached the message to the apostles, He preached the message, and ultimately somebody shared the message with me, and I received it.

    23:50-23:55

    But think of how the gospel message has been handed out over generations.

    23:55-23:58

    The same message, transforming lives.

    23:58-23:59

    The same message.

    Jesus preached it, Paul preached it, I'm standing up here preaching the same thing.

    It is not going to change.

    You're like, "Okay, Jeff, we get it. Why are you so adamant about this?" Because false teachers will come along and they're going to preach a way of salvation that sounds very close to the truth, but it's not the truth at all.

    We just did this series called Foundations and we just talked about this.

    Satan showed up, you remember the lie?

    24:32-24:36

    Did God say, did he really say that you're not allowed to eat up any of these trees?

    24:37-24:44

    And when you read that you're like, well that kind of maybe sounds a little bit like, sort of kind of like what God said. No, that is not what God said.

    You see that's what false teachers do. They take the truth and you put a little twist here, you add this, you take this away, and here's the danger, people that don't know the truth eat it up like Skittles.

    Because if somebody shows up and they're like, "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, false teaching Jesus.

    25:04-25:10

    Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, false teaching Bible." It's like, well, they said Jesus in the Bible, so everything else they said must be true.

    That's what false teachers do.

    25:14-25:18

    And you have to know how urgent this is.

    You realize, do you realize how much of your New Testament was written for the very purpose of correcting error?

    Did you know that?

    25:25-25:26

    Do you know why the book of Galatians was written?

    25:27-25:28

    To fight legalism.

    25:29-25:30

    Do you know why the book of Hebrews was written?

    25:31-25:35

    To fight people that were teaching you had to be a Jew in order to become a Christian.

    25:37-25:37

    Right?

    25:37-25:39

    Do you know why Colossians was written?

    25:40-25:41

    To fight heresy.

    25:41-25:43

    Do you know why 2 Thessalonians was written?

    25:43-25:45

    You better, we just covered this.

    25:45-25:46

    Do you know why 2 Thessalonians was written?

    25:47-25:52

    Because there are people who were false teaching about the day of the Lord and they were all confused and all concerned.

    I could go on, but so much of your New Testament is written to correct error.

    And this is the same until today.

    26:03-26:11

    Because it's always Scripture plus some other authority.

    For example, in the Roman Catholic Church, it is Scripture plus church tradition.

    another authority.

    In the Christian science cult, it is Scripture plus science and health with key to the Scriptures.

    In the Mormon cult, it is the Bible, Scripture, plus the Book of Mormon, Doctrines and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, three other books.

    We're adding other authority to the Word of God.

    That's why Jude says, "Listen, church, we have to contend for the faith." The word "contend" literally means "agonize." It literally means "struggle." He's literally saying, "You have to fight for the truth because this is not going to be easy." And that's why very few contend for the faith because it is hard.

    And I think in our day more than ever, The highest virtue is tolerance, right?

    And we want to be tolerant.

    Oh, you believe spiritual things?

    Aw, me too.

    We're practically brothers.

    Now I gotta ask, doesn't truth matter?

    Does truth matter or not?

    Because I think in here we went and nodded our heads because we have a Bible on our laps, but when we're talking to that coworker tomorrow, all of a sudden truth might not matter as much to us.

    Listen, you are called to contend for the truth.

    Yes, with the right attitude, as we've discussed and as we will talk about.

    But you have to contend for the truth.

    You know, when your friend says to you, "Oh yeah, I go to this church that believes some really, "eh, they're nice people, but they believe "kind of some goofy things that you don't really see "in the Bible." Then you need to tell your friend, "Look, here's what I want you to do.

    "I want you to call up the pastor, "and I want you to have a meeting with him, I want you to sit down and say, "You need to repent, and you need to teach what the Bible says, and not all these other things.

    And if you're not willing to do that, then I'm looking for a new church." You have to contend for the faith.

    "Well, we all believe in the same God. We all believe in the same Jesus." No, we do not. That's just not true. That is not objectively true.

    Or you say, "Well, you know, okay, I go to this church, There might be a couple of unbiblical things that we believe and unbiblical things that we do, but to be honest with you, Pastor Jeff, most of their teaching is right.

    Most of it's right.

    Yeah, that may be true, but you know what else is true?

    Do you know rat poison is 99 .995 % cornmeal and wheat germ?

    In other words, 99.995% of rat poison is good food.

    Let me ask you a question.

    If you saw your kid, if you have kids, if you don't, you can pretend with me, right?

    If you saw your kid get up in the morning thinking she's pouring a bowl of cereal and she grabs the rat poison, and she's about to take a bite, what would you do?

    Would you say, "Well, you know what?

    It is 99.995% wheat germ and cornmeal." Is that what you'd do?

    Would you slap that spoon out of her hand?

    See there's urgency here.

    There's urgency because if God's Word is true, and I believe that it is, but if God's Word is true, there is one clear way to have your sins forgiven.

    One clear way for salvation.

    One clear way to get to heaven.

    And those who are messing with the message are messing with people's eternities.

    You've got to get that.

    This is serious.

    And that's why I look again at verse 3.

    See the very first word there?

    He says "beloved." Beloved.

    Do you know why he addresses them that way?

    Because people who expose error are often considered unloving.

    Over the years, I've talked a lot about the Roman Catholic Church, been asked a lot of questions about it.

    I've had a lot of people come to this church from the Roman Catholic Church.

    I've had to address some things.

    Someone would say, "What are you going to say, Pastor Jeff?

    You say all Catholics are going to hell." I am not saying that at all.

    I want you to hear what I'm saying, okay?

    Of course not.

    There are some Catholics who are saved in spite of the church's doctrine, but no one is saved because of it.

    Listen, I very much love my Catholic friends and family, and I have a lot of them.

    I am not attacking Catholic people, but I am addressing Catholic doctrine.

    At my old church I had a friend who had a copy of the Catechism.

    It was a giant, green, hardbound book.

    I read the Catechism.

    And when you read the Catechism, I have to tell you the Catholic doctrine teaches a gospel that is contrary to the Bible in so many ways.

    The view of Mary, the purpose of the Eucharist, the way confession works, the method and purpose of baptism, doctrine of purgatory. I've had to confront these things and address what the Bible actually teaches regarding these matters and there's always a backlash to it. And right now people are squirming in their seats and sweating and oh I hope he shuts up and tells another dog story. It's a spiritual stronghold. Listen, Catholicism is a sacred cow that's off limits to expose.

    And as much as I love my Catholic family and friends, I have to tell you, the doctrine itself, what is written on the pages of their books, it's anti-gospel.

    And you see, the Bible calls us to urgency in addressing these matters, because if you really love somebody, you're going to warn them, right?

    You're going to slap the spoon of rat poison out of their hand.

    Contempting someone means, "Look, I care too much about you to let you believe in a message that's not going to save you." Like, well, okay, contend for the faith, yeah, yeah, yeah.

    How do we do that?

    We're going to be talking about that over the next four weeks, but I believe that it has to start right here.

    I believe it has to start with expository preaching.

    I'm not criticizing or condemning what any other church does.

    I can only speak to what this church does and what this church does is expository preaching why I can give you a whole lot Of reasons but in today's context, I'm going to give you one The reason we do expository preaching is knowing the truth equips you to recognize error. That's why we do this for other reasons too, but I Want you to be so familiar with what God's Word says that when you hear error Immediately you're like well, that's not right. That's not we just talked about that That can't be true because that's not what the Bible says.

    You've got to get your mind trained like that.

    What does the Bible say?

    I'll tell you what it says.

    Listen, you must understand the urgency.

    And then finally, you must understand the enemy.

    But Jude gives us a summary intro, right?

    Look at verse four.

    For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

    Certain people, false teachers, He says they crept in unnoticed.

    The Greek is literally they sneak in with bad intentions.

    They don't broadcast it, right?

    34:53-34:54

    They just kind of slide in.

    They assimilate.

    34:56-34:59

    They join the fellowship, but it's not for anything good.

    We've talked about this in past time, but the greatest danger to the church is not out there.

    The greatest danger to the church is right here, right?

    Like any army.

    What's the biggest danger to an army?

    35:15-35:25

    Spies, traitors, defectors, the people that you think are on your side and they actually aren't on your side.

    Those are the dangerous people.

    Like, well, what possible motive would somebody have to go into a church and promote false teaching?

    I don't know.

    35:41-35:43

    money, maybe power and influence.

    35:45-35:46

    Maybe they're just deceived themselves.

    35:47-35:54

    And even though we don't know what this particular false teaching was here in Jude, we do know two things about the false teachers.

    He says right here in the verse, he's like, "Here's what you need to know about them.

    35:57-36:01

    First of all, where they're heading, and second of all, what they're like." Where are they're heading?

    Do you see that?

    36:03-36:05

    He says they're designated for this condemnation.

    36:06-36:10

    God already established what ultimately happens to these kind of people who mess with his message.

    But he focuses on what they're like, and he gives us three characteristics.

    We're gonna go through these quickly, because again, this is next week's message.

    But three characteristics.

    36:20-36:21

    He's like, "Here's what these false teachers are like.

    36:22-36:28

    "Here's what the people that are like, "the traitors in your midst, "here's what they're like, take note of them." He goes, "First of all, they're ungodly.

    "I don't care if they're teachers, "I don't care if they're in small group, "I don't care if they're standing behind a microphone.

    36:35-36:36

    "They're ungodly.

    36:36-36:39

    Look at their lifestyle. Look at the way they talk.

    36:39-36:41

    Look at the things they're interested in.

    36:42-36:47

    He says, "That's how you know." They live ungodly character.

    36:48-36:49

    Secondly is their lifestyle.

    36:50-36:55

    He says, "They pervert the grace of God into sensuality." Look at that.

    36:56-36:59

    They pervert the grace of God into sensuality.

    36:59-37:00

    What does that mean?

    37:01-37:04

    That means they use grace as their excuse to live unrestrained lives.

    37:05-37:08

    You see, there's one side is legalism, right?

    37:09-37:16

    Legalism says if you want God to be happy, if you want to be righteous, these are the things that you have to do.

    You have to dress this way, and you can't eat this, and you can't drink that, and you have to do this, and you have to do that, and you're not allowed to do this.

    37:26-37:30

    And when you do these things, God is happy. That's legalism.

    37:32-37:37

    But there's the other side of the spectrum, and that's license.

    37:38-37:45

    And that's like, "There's no rules! Jesus died so I'm free, and all my sins are forgiven so I can do whatever I want.

    I can say what I want, I can smoke what I want, I can drink what I want, I can..." Whatever, it doesn't matter, because I'm under grace, man.

    I'm not under Old Testament law, I'm under grace.

    37:55-37:57

    So I can do whatever I want to do.

    And these are the people that he's talking about here.

    They pervert the grace of God into sensuality.

    That is not biblical.

    38:09-38:12

    Titus 2, verses 11 and 12. Look at this.

    This is just one of a dozen examples that I could give you off the top of my head.

    But look at this.

    "For the grace of God has appeared." You're like, "Woohoo, grace! Bringing salvation for all people." Yes! Oh, look at the next line.

    "Training us to what?" renounce ungodliness.

    Does that sound like license to do whatever the heck you want to do?

    38:33-38:42

    To renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in this present age.

    God's grace is meant to change you.

    38:46-38:49

    To conform you into the character of His Son.

    38:50-38:57

    Not like, "Oh, you're saved, you got your ticket to heaven, go have fun." That is not biblical.

    38:58-39:01

    The last thing he tells you about them, he talks about their authority.

    39:01-39:04

    He says they deny our only Master and Lord Jesus Christ.

    39:06-39:13

    They do not live under the Lordship of Jesus, which is also part of that unrestrained type living, right?

    But Jude introduces himself as a servant of Jesus Christ, and like, not these people.

    39:19-39:20

    Like, no.

    39:21-39:23

    Jesus isn't my Master.

    39:25-39:25

    Not my Lord.

    39:26-39:29

    don't say that out loud. He says that's how they live.

    39:30-40:11

    Jude doesn't describe their false teaching. Instead he focuses on their lives. And you're gonna see that next week. You're like, "Why?" Like if they're teaching wrong things, why doesn't Jude just say, "Hey, they're gonna come and say XYZ and I just want you to know that that's not true, so don't believe it." Why doesn't he just tell us what their false teaching is. Here's why. Because heresies come and go. Heresies change. And I think if Jude would have said this is the false teaching, we would have limited our application and understanding to that one thing and missed the bigger point of what he's trying to say.

    While heresies come and go and change, there's one common denominator. False teachers are always ungodly at the core.

    Why?

    40:25-40:29

    Because only Jesus Christ can transform someone, right?

    40:30-40:33

    Only Jesus Christ can make someone born again.

    40:34-40:39

    So false teachers show their true colors by the way they live.

    40:41-40:53

    And that's why Jesus in his very first sermon, He didn't say, "You'll recognize them by their doctrine." What did He say?

    40:54-41:11

    He said, "Beware of false prophets who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves." Here's what He said, "You will recognize them by their fruits." Because what you really believe determines how you really live, for good or for bad.

    you believe, what you really believe, shows up in how you live.

    41:18-41:22

    So this is Jude's introduction. This is the call to arms.

    We were given, we were given this truth, and it is so precious, and it is so powerful, It is so eternally important.

    We, church, are called to fight to keep it.

    41:43-41:44

    All right, let's pray.

    41:45-41:56

    Father in heaven, we live in a day that truth just isn't even a concept people are willing to reckon with.

    41:57-41:59

    We argue about how many genders there are.

    42:00-42:07

    And then we come to your word and all kinds of doubt being cast upon it.

    42:08-42:14

    But God, you have called us as a church to contend for the truth, contend for the faith.

    42:15-42:16

    And it's not easy.

    42:16-42:23

    And we have to say some hard things, and we have to say some uncomfortable things, and we have to have some uncomfortable conversations.

    42:25-42:28

    But God, I pray that you would give us a conviction that your truth matters.

    42:29-42:34

    Your Word says that you have exalted Your Word even above Your name.

    42:35-42:44

    So Father, I pray that we as Your church would embrace that attitude, that truth matters, and it's worth contending for.

    And Fathers, we're about to worship Your holy name.

    42:48-42:54

    I just want to pray for Harvest Bible Chapel, that You would multiply mercy, peace, and love.

    that we don't become these...

    God, please don't let us become these jerks, these arrogant...

    We have a couple of Bible verses memorized and we think we're awesome, and we just want to whip people into place.

    Father, please multiply mercy in our hearts, multiply peace in our hearts, and Father, multiply love in our hearts so that we can approach this subject in a way like Jesus Christ and in a way that glorifies Your name.

    So Father, now we're about to stand up and tell You what we think about You, so that we pray that our worship is a beautiful sound in Your ear.

    Now I was going to read through the whole psalm initially, but I think my sermon might run a little long.

    So to save a little bit of time, we're going to read through the psalm as we address each point.

    So Psalm 32, it's a miktam of David, and it contrasts the blessings of forgiveness with oppressiveness of concealing one's sin.

    A forgiven person is blessed, whereas a person who hides themself has sorrow and suffering.

    01:10-01:18

    The contrast of hiding versus being hidden in this Psalm is expressed poetically in different ways.

    But the key terms for us this morning to be acknowledging, that is uncovering and then of course covering. Now in Old Testament practice, one sin was atoned for by an animal sacrifice, one sin was covered up and put out of God's view. That's what the Hebrew word translated atonement means. It means to cover over. Now there's many things going on in Israel's sacrificial system, but for our purposes this morning, the central point is that by offering a sacrifice, the worshiper's sin was covered.

    The relationship with God was restored and the worshiper could be in God's presence again.

    Now, a couple of weeks ago, we heard about the ineffectiveness of leafy underpants.

    They were just simply inadequate to cover Adam and Eve's guilt and their shame because those leaves would eventually dry out.

    02:16-02:18

    They would turn to dust just like Adam.

    02:20-02:26

    And we learned that God provided a better covering through the death of animals.

    02:26-02:35

    He covered Adam and Eve with the animal skins, it was somewhat more durable covering, but it emphasized the consequences of their sin.

    It hid their shame, and it also prefigured the work of the promised Messiah.

    02:44-02:50

    But we'll see in our passage this morning, there is no reference to animal sacrifice as a means of covering.

    Psalm 32 presents two alternatives.

    Either we cover our sin or God covers it.

    In Psalm 32, David sings about covering his sin himself and things don't go well for him.

    So that's our first point.

    When I cover my ways, I suffer.

    Look at verses three through five, and then we're gonna look at verses nine and 10.

    David says, "For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.

    03:25-03:28

    For day and night your hand was heavy upon me.

    03:28-03:31

    My strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.

    03:32-03:32

    Selah.

    03:34-04:08

    Do not be like a horse or a mule without understanding which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or will not stay near you." And then verse 10, "Many are the sorrows of the wicked." We see here that David describes great physical suffering, which he experienced because he hid his transgression. That's possible. He's referring to the year-long period during which he covered up his adultery with Bathsheba and his subsequent murder of Uriah to cover up her pregnancy.

    He kept silent.

    Probably many people in the palace knew what was going on. Bathsheba, she certainly knew, and his oldest sons, they probably knew, and they began to act just like him. Like a stubborn animal, like a stubborn mule, David refused to confess and be corrected, and he suffered as a result. He felt God's heavy hand upon him, squashing him and afflicting him with pain and weakness all the way down to his bones. When he says his strength was dried up, it was though all the vitality had been just drained from his body.

    You know, we kind of feel like that if we've had a high fever and we recover and we just feel like, oh, all wrung out, right?

    That's how David felt.

    But there's also a hint here of being cooked.

    The Hebrew phrasing in verse four, it's subject to some different interpretations, but there is a suggestion here of a cake, like a pancake being scorched on a griddle.

    And don't miss the fact that God is the one doing the cooking.

    So what David is experiencing as torment, God is dispensing to him as grace.

    05:33-05:38

    As a result of David's torment, he became an ineffective leader and an ineffective father.

    Above all, he was an ineffective worshiper.

    05:43-06:01

    His relationship with God was completely shattered and there was absolutely no sacrifice David could have offered for adultery and murder, even if he had wanted to make such an offering because the sacrificial system was for unintentional sins, not high-handed sins like murder and adultery.

    So David's stuck.

    06:04-06:06

    He's stuck in mental and physical torment.

    06:07-06:12

    He's afraid to confess and there's no way that he can see to be made right with God.

    Now I have some experience with trying to cover my sin.

    One or two of you might have some of that kind of experience.

    One of my many experiences occurred when I was about eight years old.

    I had a friend, he was a bad influence, and he told me, "It's easy to steal candy bars "from the drugstore down the street from our house.

    "It's easy.

    06:40-06:44

    All you got to do is stick it under your shirt and you just walk right out with it.

    Okay.

    You know, some details about sticking it under your shirt would have been helpful.

    So I go into the drugstore and I grab a candy bar off the rack and I stick it under my shirt and I'm walking out right by the cashier.

    She grabs me and she's, I'm like, "No, no, let me go, let me go." Nope, nope, nope, nope, you're coming with me.

    And she hauls me back to the back of the store, puts me in the stock room, tells the druggist who owns the store what I've done, and where I was sitting, I could see him.

    He was up like in this booth where all the drugs were kept, and I could see the front door of the store.

    I could sort of make a clear shot down the aisle.

    I'm like, maybe I could just bolt.

    And I'm just sitting there suffering.

    I'm sitting there for hours just like squirming.

    It felt like hours.

    So finally the pharmacist, he comes down, he comes down to where I'm sitting.

    Yeah, it was bad.

    Well, actually it was good because I felt a lot better after I confessed.

    Got this all off my chest.

    But a few weeks later, sometime later, my parents were out running errands and they had to stop by the drugstore.

    And I thought I could just stay in the car with my mom or with my dad who was driving.

    I'd stay in the car, mom would go into the drugstore.

    And she said, "Come on, Richie, you're coming with me." I'm like, "No, I'm not going in there." Because the last thing this guy said to me before I left his store, he got down in my face and he said, "Don't you ever come into my store again.

    "You got that?" You know?

    10:21-10:24

    So I'm like, "Mom, Mommy, I can't go in that store.

    "That man in there, he hates me.

    10:26-10:27

    "He's mad at me.

    10:27-10:28

    "I can't go in there.

    "No, you're coming with me.

    10:30-10:37

    "Come on, let's go." She drags me out of the car and she's pulling me through the parking lot.

    "No, I can't go in there, I can't, I can't.

    10:40-10:48

    "That man's gonna get me." And my mother says, "It's okay, you're with me." And you know what?

    It was, it was okay.

    10:53-10:55

    I don't even think that guy remembered who I was.

    It was okay.

    Well, back to David.

    11:02-11:04

    He too has had enough of torment.

    11:05-11:10

    And so he acknowledges his sin to God and he experiences forgiveness.

    It's our next point.

    When I acknowledge my ways, I am forgiven.

    11:18-11:19

    Look at verse five.

    11:20-11:24

    I acknowledged my sin to you and I did not cover my iniquity.

    11:25-11:39

    I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord and you forgave the iniquity of my sin, Selah." We're not sure what Selah means, but that's a good place for that word.

    David stopped hiding his sin.

    11:43-11:47

    He gives up the futile effort to cover his crimes and confesses them to the Lord.

    11:47-11:49

    Who knows everything he has done anyway?

    11:50-11:56

    There's no sacrifice offered or even mentioned as a means of covering sin.

    11:57-12:02

    As I said, there is literally nothing David can do to expunge his sin, let alone cover it up.

    If he were to offer up all the lambs and bulls in the world, it wouldn't be enough.

    12:09-12:14

    Yet David is forgiven because he confesses his transgressions to God.

    12:16-12:21

    Perhaps David is looking back to the Lord covering up Adam and Eve's high -handed sin.

    David is anticipating a further work by God in which sin will be dealt with once and for all and not by animal sacrifices but again by the Lord himself. Either way, David by faith wholly relies on God's known character for mercy and grace for forgiveness. And what is mercy but not getting what one deserves? And what is grace but getting what one most assuredly does not deserve.

    So David is forgiven, but there's something in addition here to forgiveness of sin.

    There is life-altering change.

    David's whole life is placed on a new trajectory.

    Note the statement, "I acknowledged my sin to you." The Hebrew word translated, acknowledged, is yada, to know.

    Maybe you've heard someone say yada, yada, yada.

    13:26-13:27

    I know, I know, I know.

    13:28-13:42

    Well, you know, that's kind of flippant, but to yada, to know, this isn't just a mental knowing, it is a deep and intimate knowing, as in Adam knew his wife Eve.

    It's the same word, Adam yada Eve.

    Essentially, David is saying, "I will know all of my sin before you. I will uncover it all and expose it all to you, Lord.

    I will admit and know that you know all of my sin." Are you ready to do that? Are you ready to know the Lord in all your sin, in every aspect of your life and yourself? Because when we do so, like we will be directed in right paths.

    God responds to David's confession with a promise of teaching and mentoring.

    He says, "I will guide you in the right way." Look at verses eight and nine.

    "I will instruct you and teach you "in the way you should go.

    "I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

    14:41-15:01

    "Do not be like a horse or a mule without understanding, "which must be curved with bit and bridle, "or it will not stay near you." Now, some see in verses eight and nine, David assuming the role of a teacher by turning his experience with sin and confession and forgiveness into instruction for others in the assembly.

    Others see that God himself is interjecting him, interjecting here in response to confession.

    I think either understanding would be profitable for us, But for our purposes this morning, I'm adopting the view that this is the Lord speaking to David, primarily because the you at the end of verse eight is singular.

    If the you were plural, it would make more sense that David is teaching the congregation.

    15:32-15:40

    But it seems more likely to me here that God is saying to David and saying to us, I will teach you the way you should go.

    15:41-15:43

    I'm keeping careful watch over you.

    15:45-15:52

    Acknowledging the Lord and having Him teach me how I should go reminds me of Proverbs 3 .6.

    In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.

    Acknowledge here, like Psalm 32, is yada, and like Psalm 32, with the knowing, comes direction.

    The "ways" in the first line refer to our course of life, the things we do, and the "paths" in the second line refer to the way we do them.

    You know, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.

    And with the Lord teaching me, I can be assured that I am going in the right way.

    I can be assured that I'm doing the right things and that I'm doing them in a right or straight way and not veering off into the ditch.

    I think that's pretty cool.

    What exactly are all my ways?

    16:54-16:57

    And we'll say, oh, my finances, yeah.

    I acknowledge the Lord in my finances.

    I acknowledge the Lord in my job or my profession.

    I acknowledge the Lord in my relationships, my marriage.

    Yeah, I acknowledge the Lord, especially when I go to church.

    But you know how all those things can be mostly surface?

    It's not, it is what other people see.

    17:21-17:31

    And we can cultivate an image of acknowledging God while at the same time trying to cover up many interior things ourselves.

    The Pharisees were very good at this.

    17:35-17:37

    It's why Jesus called them whitewashed tombs.

    17:38-17:44

    They were all clean and white and fancy on the outside, and in the inside, they were completely gross.

    So what about your inner life?

    Are your thoughts and emotions among your ways?

    17:53-17:57

    How about your anger, your resentments and grudges that you bear?

    17:58-18:01

    How about your insecurities and your worry?

    18:03-18:11

    your depression, your discouragements, everything you bottle up inside, are those among all your ways?

    18:13-18:18

    Our tendency is to say, those are mine, those are mine, don't look at them.

    18:19-18:27

    I'm working on them, not very intentionally, not very purposefully, but I'm working on them and I would appreciate it if you don't notice.

    That's what we do.

    18:31-18:35

    But what happens to all those ways when we acknowledge the Lord in them?

    18:38-18:39

    But first let's go a little deeper.

    Let's do some soul work and go to the source where all these things reside in your memory.

    18:47-18:54

    Our memory is where we store up everything that we've ever done, everything that's ever been done to us.

    18:55-18:58

    Now sure, we have some fond and happy memories, right?

    18:59-19:57

    the big winning play in the game, graduated, my baptism, the day I confessed the Lord as my Savior. I mean there's a whole in entertainment complex out there that wants you to come to their park so you can make memories. You can't just do it once, you got to keep coming back to make new memories and get part with thousands of dollars every time you do it. But I'm talking about the kinds of memories that kind of shackle us. So often we go down into the dark musty basement of our memory and we bust open the crates and we travel down memory lane of our regrets and our shame and our guilt and all the many things we can't or don't want to forget. And we take them out we look at them why did I do that. Why did this happen to me?

    Oh, this is never going to heal. This is never going to go away. We just hold on to it all. Our memories are interwoven with everything we do. They permeate and influence all of our ways, our thoughts, and our emotions, and consequently our actions.

    Do you doubt that? And why do people go to therapists not to deal with the event or events that happened to them? Because the past can't be changed. No, they go for help processing the memories of what happened.

    Why do people worry and become anxious to the point of emotional paralysis?

    20:44-20:51

    because they remember something that happened to them or others in the past and they're afraid it's gonna happen again.

    20:55-21:08

    Why do people harbor resentments and bear grudges? They've always got a score to settle, they're keeping a ledger as though they're entitled to bear some ill will even against a fellow believer.

    Now I'll admit I struggled a bit with this one because there are people who have really harmed us, people who have taken things away from us.

    21:21-21:24

    You know, that could be a whole other sermon.

    21:26-21:33

    That could be a sermon for another day in forgiving those who have really harmed us.

    So for this morning, I just want to talk about a situation where someone hasn't necessarily sinned against you. Let's talk about when just somebody bugs you because you're connecting them to something in your past, in your memory, their personality, their behavior. Maybe you don't like their hair color, their body art, their clothes, whatever petty little thing that just rubs you the wrong way, causes you to compare yourself and feel small. Maybe you feel like you're in competition with that person or they're they're maybe gonna take something away from you that somebody's gonna like them better than you. And this kind of stuff gives rise to gossip and bitterness, hard feelings, and we just continually remember, you know, I don't really don't like that person.

    He just rubbed me the wrong way. Why do people engage in self-sabotage?

    You remember something that happened to them in the past, it makes them feel worthless, I feel like a screw-up, someone told me once I was stupid and I wouldn't amount to anything. We remember that stuff and in time we come to believe that's true.

    So we keep repeating the lies to ourselves instead of what does the Word of God say about me?

    23:13-23:18

    In every instance memory might not be true but we treat it as though it's fact.

    23:20-23:27

    And all our ways then become enslaved and distorted and wrecked by our memories.

    23:29-23:36

    So we must recognize that our memory is indeed among our ways in which we must acknowledge the Lord.

    I have a memory to share with you.

    23:41-23:45

    I think it illustrates the great benefits of acknowledging the Lord in our memory.

    23:46-23:50

    When I was a boy, about seven years old, my father had a dog named Robin.

    23:51-23:58

    She was a little Pekingese, and he raised her up from a puppy, and he loved that dog.

    23:59-24:00

    He just loved her.

    24:02-24:04

    He loved her more than his own flesh and blood.

    24:06-24:09

    All his tenderness, all his kind words were saved for that dog.

    24:11-24:18

    He showed her more affection, more tenderness, than he ever showed any of his kids.

    24:20-24:27

    In my case, he was more likely to tell me I was stupid or berate me for doing something immature than he was to praise me.

    24:28-24:30

    And he never said he loved me.

    24:31-24:32

    But he loved Robin.

    24:33-24:35

    And she adored him.

    24:35-24:39

    She was his one source of unconditional love.

    24:40-24:53

    And when he came home from work each day, he'd pull the car up the driveway and he'd get out and he would open the gate and he would pull the car up into the driveway alongside the house and go back and close the gate.

    And then the big moment, he would go open the door on the side of the house and Robin would come bolting out that door, barking, and she would run around and bark and, "Oh, there you are, my girl.

    How are you?" up and she'd squirm and he'd rub her oh you little dickens you how you been how was your day oh it was it was the best time of the day for both of them and everything was just right in their worlds but one spring afternoon my sister Marlene and I were in the house when dad came home from work and for reasons I never understood afterwards my dad let Robin out of the house before he pulled the car into the yard. And a few minutes later I heard my dad's anguished yell into the house, "Marlene, help!

    I just killed my dog!" We rushed to the door and I looked out the door and there's Robin's broken little body, maroon blood flowing from her muzzle and a glassy stare in her open eyes. And my father yelled at me, "Richard, get back in the house!" And I ran into the living room, I'm in tears, and I can hear him out there cursing and taking God's name in vain and calling down oaths on himself, and I ran into the living room and I knelt down and I'm crying and praying, "God, please don't let Robin die, please don't let Robin die." Over and over. My prayers were of no effect.

    Sometime later, I door on the side of the house to see what my father was doing and he was kind of standing in the middle of the driveway with the hose. He had washed all the blood off the driveway and he was just standing there lost in thought or maybe self-recrimination. I saw he had pulled the car up into the garage and Robin's body was wrapped up in some kind of old bedspread and he had laid her up on the trunk before he buried her. I was deeply impressed by my father's response to this tragedy. He never spoke of Robin again. He and the whole family, we went on with our lives as though she had never graced our lives, never been part of the family. But for my father was another bitter loss. Both of his parents had died within the previous five years and if memory serves me correctly which it may not his sister's husband had recently died after a long and difficult illness but my father he rolled with the punches he accepted tragedy and he moved on his His silent stoicism and acceptance of what could not be changed taught me how to respond to tragedy.

    That is what I remembered for over 40 years.

    But that is not what really happened that day.

    The truth emerged several years ago when I wanted to write about that event, a poem perhaps.

    It was after my father died.

    I wanted to capture in some way how my father had responded to the death of his dog.

    28:26-28:30

    So of course I asked my sister Marlene about it, what she remembered.

    28:31-28:35

    She said, "Well, I wasn't there that day.

    28:37-28:42

    Mother was home." So I described to her what I remembered.

    28:43-28:57

    And I said, "Why did dad let Robin out of the house before he pulled the car in?" She said, "He didn't." Our memory sometimes has a funny way of shaping things.

    That's all she said.

    She didn't say any more, and you know what?

    She didn't need to.

    29:07-29:33

    was enough for me to remember what had really happened. I was responsible for Robin being in the yard when my dad came home from work. I had come into the house probably from playing outside and it must have been near to the time when he would come home from work. And I opened the door and she bolted out expecting to find my dad. It's just that kid.

    My mother told me, "You need to get her back in the house before your dad gets home." I probably whined about it, I put my coat back on, "All right, I'll go out and get her." Robin, of course, wanted nothing to do with me, and I made a less than half-hearted attempt to get her into the house. "Come on, come on, we got to go in the house. Come on, Robin, come on." she's running around the yard, she's running around between my leg, she's just you know squirming around, she's not gonna pay attention to me. So fine, fine, stay in the yard. I go in the house, she won't come in, declare defeat, that's that.

    You know the rest of the story. Except that my father had no idea that Robin was in the yard when he pulled in. And after the sickening thump and finding it was his beloved dog, my mother Lucille that my father called out to. And when I was crying and praying it was my mother who stood behind me and said, "Your prayers aren't going to bring Robin back." As I was preparing this message I told Bethany about my real role and she said, "You were a little boy. You couldn't have known what would happen, but whether I could foresee the consequences was not the issue. I knew what I was supposed to do. James 4:17 says, "If anyone then knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them." I knew what I was supposed to do. Just pick up a dog and carry her into the house. Just stay with the dog in the yard until your dad gets home. Go stand at the fence and let your dad know that hey Robin's in the yard dad don't pull the car in. Just do the right thing the right way at the right time. That pretty much sums up all sin doesn't it?

    The failure to do the right thing the right way at the right time and when we don't there are consequences.

    Speaking of which, you could probably guess what my father did to me afterwards.

    My father who loved his dog more than me. I deserve spanking, anger, recrimination. How could you be so stupid? Hatred toward me for having done something unforgivable. But none of those things happened. Ever. As I said, for over 40 years I remembered how my father handled Robin's death, but I completely forgot my role in it. You might ask, "Well, now that you remember what really happened, don't you feel awful? Doesn't that change the way you see yourself? No. And yes. Because in recounting my misremembering in the actual truth, I see the power of grace.

    How? Because my mother placed herself between me and my father. Yes, he loved his dog and yet in his own way he loved me, but he really loved my mother. And my mother took responsibility for Robin's death. She took the blame. She was the adult in the room.

    She covered over my role and took responsibility. She took the blame. She covered over my role.

    33:27-33:39

    And because my father really loved my mother and because he valued their relationship above everything else, he could not stay angry at her, nor did he direct any anger at me.

    He instead showed me grace and love because my mother, out of grace and love, protected me and restored me to my father.

    My parents' gracious actions enabled me to live in a forgetful way for decades.

    That is real grace, enabled me to live in freedom from guilt and self-recrimination and shame.

    Grace enabled me to never have to wonder what my father thought of me, or if he remained angry at me, or if there was going to be some future reprisal or punishment.

    Do you see the gospel here?

    34:26-34:30

    The Father loves us, but our sins have separated us from him.

    34:31-34:39

    But Jesus put himself between us and the Father, and out of love and obedience to the Father, he took responsibility for all of our ways.

    34:40-34:47

    He took our sin and our blame and our guilt upon himself, and he bore the punishment we deserve.

    34:48-34:55

    And rising to life again, He covers us with His righteousness and holiness and brings us to the Father.

    34:56-35:00

    And it's alright, because we're with Him.

    35:01-35:04

    Because the Father really loves the Son.

    35:05-35:09

    He approves and accepts all that Jesus has done on our behalf.

    35:10-35:15

    And therefore, He really loves us just as He loves His Son.

    35:17-35:20

    Jesus has protected us and restored us to the Father.

    35:21-35:29

    And when we acknowledge God in all our ways, including our memories, the grace of God enables us to live in a forgetful way.

    35:31-35:40

    Beloved, this is real grace that brings us to life in freedom from guilt and self-recrimination and shame.

    35:41-35:44

    We never have to wonder what our heavenly Father thinks of us.

    35:45-35:52

    He delights in us because Jesus has removed our sin from us as far as the East is from the West.

    35:53-35:56

    He has thrown them into the depths of the sea.

    35:57-36:02

    He does not remember the sins of our youth or even last week.

    36:03-36:08

    And when we repent and put our trust in Jesus, neither should we.

    36:10-36:19

    You see, if my earthly father's grace toward me could set me free from guilt over the death of his dog?

    36:20-36:29

    How much greater does your heavenly Father's grace set you free from everything you've ever done and everything you've covered up in your memory?

    36:30-36:33

    We are not defined by our memories.

    36:33-36:35

    We are not defined by our past.

    36:36-36:47

    We are free indeed, and we are defined by our Savior, Jesus Christ, because of what he has done for us and because of our union with him.

    36:48-36:57

    So acknowledge the Lord in all of your memories and see how God has used every one of them, every event in your life to demonstrate his grace.

    36:58-37:03

    See how he has used even your sin to spur you towards repentance and faith in Christ.

    37:04-37:16

    And when you see how his grace was at work in your past, humbly thank him and leave the old behind and from now on walk in the ever-present grace and freedom in Jesus Christ.

    We can do this because for freedom Christ has set us free.

    37:23-37:27

    We can live this way because God shows his love for us.

    37:28-37:31

    Even while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

    37:32-37:47

    Whereas once we were alienated and hostile in mind toward God doing evil deeds, Jesus has now reconciled us to the Father by His death, to present us holy and blameless and above reproach before our Father.

    God transforms our inner life, indeed our whole existence when we acknowledge Him in all our ways.

    So let's make some application to a few of the ways I mentioned earlier.

    Now I admit I've been prone to deep discouragement and feelings of worthlessness, but I have a choice.

    I can wallow in self-pity and self-recrimination and really self-destruction, or I can acknowledge God there.

    Remember who was roasting David, so to speak?

    God was.

    38:23-38:28

    Now we're tempted to say when we get down in the depths of discouragement, "Lord, where are you?

    38:29-38:30

    "Where have you been?

    38:31-38:36

    "It's about time you showed up." And he says, "I've been there the whole time.

    38:37-39:41

    I am omnipresent, you know. All you had to do was acknowledge me. All you had to do was know me. I'm right here. How can I wallow in self-pity when I am with the Lord who says, "I am with you always to the end of the age." To acknowledge the Lord in such a place is to say to my soul, "Hope in God, for I shall again praise him my salvation and my God and I will rejoice and be glad in your steadfast love because you have seen my affliction and you know the distress of my soul how about your resentment your grudges we're again we're going to talk about our brothers and sisters in Christ are you entitled to bear ill will against a brother and sister are you authorized by God to hold petty little grievances against your siblings in Christ because they are or do something you don't like because they just rub you the wrong way.

    You have a biblical warrant to withhold grace and love when we're commanded to love one another.

    Jesus didn't say, "I have a good suggestion for you. It would be really great if you really liked each other." No, the command is to love one another as I have loved you.

    The command is to love each other deeply because love covers over a multitude of sins, as well as overlooking personality differences and other human quirks for the sake of Christ.

    And there's that cover word again.

    If your heavenly Father can graciously cover over your sins and your quirks and your personality, can you not do the same for your brother and sister in Christ?

    What would our humble little assembly here look like if we graciously lived with one another in such holy forgetfulness and unity?

    How about your worry?

    What happens when you acknowledge the Lord in all your worry?

    Some people seem to be really proud of their ability to worry about things.

    40:53-40:55

    Oh, I just worry about everything.

    Like that's the most natural thing to do?

    It's the right thing to do.

    41:03-41:05

    I just worry about everything.

    41:05-41:08

    I just lay awake at night worrying.

    41:09-41:11

    I'm not making fun of people.

    41:11-41:13

    Believe me, I'm not making fun of anyone.

    I'm here to encourage you because God says, "Do not be anxious about anything, "but in everything by prayer and supplication "with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God." Because the Lord has given us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.

    To acknowledge the Lord in my worry is to remember that I can be strong and courageous and not be in fear or dread, for it is the Lord my God who goes with me.

    He will not leave me nor forsake me.

    41:53-41:57

    In every memory, in every way, God is there.

    So acknowledge him and you will find freedom and release all your ways that bind you.

    He will make all your ways straight with his truth and he will cover all your ways with his grace and his forgiveness and his steadfast love.

    Now we're almost done.

    When God covers my ways, I am blessed.

    I'm blessed because my sins, first of all, have been completely removed.

    Look at verses one and two.

    Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

    Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

    To be blessed is simply to be happy.

    42:42-42:45

    As we've seen, God has removed all of our iniquity.

    He's removed every barrier between us and him.

    God is always for us and to be blessed is to live in the assurance that our Abba Father He's always steadfastly with us in all of our circumstances.

    When God covers my ways, I'm protected because I'm in the very presence of God and He surrounds me.

    Look at verses 6 and 7 and then verse 10.

    "Therefore, let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found.

    Surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him.

    43:23-44:16

    are a hiding place for me, you preserve me from trouble." And then verse 10, "And steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord." The raging waters will not reach me. The raging waters are a figurative way of describing trouble and chaos. In the Hebrew mind, in the biblical account, the sea is a place of chaos. But God promises such chaos will never surround us or overwhelm us. Instead, we're hidden in Him and, as verse says, we're surrounded by His steadfast love. Instead of being overwhelmed by chaos and distress, we are overwhelmed with the Lord's steadfast love. And then finally, when God covers my ways, I'm exultant.

    I can exalt God because He is exultant over me. He surrounds me with shouting and songs. Look at verse 7, see the last line there in verse 11. You surround me with shouts of deliverance, Selah, and Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.

    To be exultant is to be filled with or expressing great joy or triumph.

    44:48-44:52

    To be exultant is to be filled with a jubilant joy.

    44:53-45:08

    Other translations render verse 7c as "You surround me with songs of deliverance, or joyful songs of deliverance." The easy to read version renders it, you surround me and protect me.

    So I sing about the way you saved me.

    45:13-45:16

    We become effective, joyful worshipers.

    We sing out of our restoration, out of our freedom to our gracious father.

    So let's review.

    When we acknowledge our iniquities and our sins, we're forgiven.

    When we go on to acknowledge the Lord in all our ways, He directs us in straight paths.

    And here's a good opportunity.

    A curse is a pronouncement of destruction on someone.

    And we saw that God put a curse, not just on man and woman and the serpent, but on the ground itself.

    And then last week, our story in Genesis ended where we ended the story in Genesis last week was Adam and Eve were covered by animal skins by God.

    God actually performed the first sacrifice, killing an animal to provide a permanent covering for Adam and Eve.

    And then he booted them from the Garden of Eden, posted an armed guard, specifically he did not want them eating from the tree of life.

    And we can't stop there.

    We can't say, "That can't be where the story ends!

    And what I want to tell you today is the story doesn't end there.

    Ultimately, Jesus Christ is going to restore all things.

    The book of Revelation is about the last seven years of life on earth, known as the Tribulation, which includes God's judgment on sinners.

    It talks about the rise and the fall of the Antichrist and of Babylon.

    Talks about the return of Jesus Christ.

    It talks about the millennium reign.

    04:43-04:45

    Jesus Christ is going to reign on the earth for a thousand years.

    Revelation 20 tells us we see a last revolt by Satan, which is quickly squashed.

    Revelation talks about the great white throne judgment for everyone who hasn't received the forgiveness that God's offered in Christ.

    they're going to stand before God someday and have to give an account and ultimately be cast into judgment.

    And then Revelation tells us that this heaven and this earth will be vaporized, destroyed.

    And then when we get to Revelation 21, there's a creation of the new heaven and the new earth and the city, New Jerusalem revealed.

    Now, there's so much confusion about heaven.

    And even in the church, a lot of times, if you were just grabbed to just grab somebody here randomly and say, "Hey, describe heaven for me." You might get a weird answer.

    There's just so much misunderstanding about heaven.

    And look, I'm not judging.

    I'm not criticizing because I've been there.

    And much, if I can confess to you, much of my understanding of heaven came from the music that I listened to growing up.

    And if you get your theology of heaven from the music you listen to, you're gonna be all kind of messed up.

    Do you know what I mean?

    For example, like, how do you get to heaven?

    How do you get to heaven?

    Well, according to Led Zeppelin, it's a stairway to heaven.

    I'm like, "Oh, okay, so you go up the stairway, "and apparently when you get there, how do you enter?

    "Well, according to Guns N' Roses, "you have to knock, knock, knock on heaven's door, right?

    "Do you know what I'm talking about?

    "I could sing it for you if you don't know the reference."

    And that's the moment the riot broke out.

    Where is heaven?

    Well, Warrant said, "Heaven isn't too far away." But at the risk of sounding like she was contradicting, and Belinda Carlyle told us that heaven is a place on earth.

    But then Alice in Chains came along and said, "Heaven's beside you." I can do this all day.

    And you're like, oh, I hope he doesn't.

    You know, Eric Clapton made us cry when he sang "Tears in Heaven." But "Heaven" was a pickup line for NXS.

    And they sang "Heaven Sent." That's what I call you ♪

    But my point is this, there's a point to all this.

    We get all these concepts about heaven from all these other sources And it's no wonder we're confused.

    We're like, what's heaven like?

    And then we get to church and we're like, you received Jesus Christ and you go to heaven.

    And you're like, I'm not even sure what that means.

    Right?

    I'm gonna tell you what that means today, all right?

    So no more excuses.

    No more, this is what I think heaven might be like.

    I'm gonna tell you what the Bible says.

    Revelation 21, we're gonna look at this quickly.

    and then we're gonna land on 22.

    But look at 21, first couple of verses.

    John says, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, "for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, "and the sea was no more." All right, we talked about that.

    This heaven and earth is gonna be destroyed.

    09:06-09:08

    He's going to create a new heaven and a new earth.

    09:10-09:12

    Look at verse two, because this is something a lot of people miss.

    09:13-09:22

    He says, "And I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

    We'll stop there.

    09:26-09:32

    You see, John sees this capital city of new heaven and new earth.

    09:34-09:36

    And like, what is this city?

    09:37-09:42

    Well, you see, this is the place that Jesus is preparing for you.

    You remember, we went through the gospel of John And Jesus says, "I'm going to prepare a place for you." This is the place that He's making!

    And you're like, "Well, what's it like?" Well, He gives us some description of heaven, but really here's all you need to know.

    It says right here, it's prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

    10:10-10:12

    We have a whole bunch of weddings coming up.

    And have you ever seen a bride?

    10:17-10:19

    Like seriously, have you ever seen a bride?

    10:21-10:24

    Every bride, breathtakingly beautiful.

    10:26-10:34

    Because on that day, there is so much time and energy and effort and expense and so much care.

    She puts so much care into the preparation of herself because she wants her husband when he sees her coming down that aisle, Just this is what is prepared for me, right?

    And that's the same analogy that's used here.

    Jesus is putting that much care and attention into preparing this place for you.

    He's not just throwing up a couple of two by fours and some nails and say, "This is good enough.

    "You deserve hell, but here's a shanty for you." No, he's preparing this perfect place.

    And we're not gonna read it, you can read it later, but we see the dimensions of this city.

    Verses 15 through 17 says that it's shaped like a cube.

    Like how big is this city?

    11:20-11:25

    Well, each wall is 1,380 miles long, the Bible says.

    And each of the walls also 72 yards thick.

    I was gonna tell you what that was in feet, but I'm like, these are football fans.

    They know what 72 yards looks like.

    11:40-11:41

    That's how thick the walls are.

    You think that's literal?

    Yeah, these are literal measurements.

    If you look at the text, it's straightforward.

    Like, well, how big is that?

    Well, if you took this new Jerusalem and just set it on top of the United States, it would go from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, and it would go from the Atlantic Ocean to Colorado.

    That's how big this city is.

    That's not really what I want to talk about this morning.

    I want to talk about life inside the city.

    And that's where we get to in chapter 22.

    And with everything that we can wonder about heaven, you know, just was it about a month or six weeks ago, Alex Gianetti preached about heaven.

    And we have all this information.

    12:34-12:38

    We know so much, like, what the Bible says about heaven.

    And it seems that for every answer we get, we have three more questions, right?

    We can wonder a lot what this place is like, but there's one thing that I wanna make absolutely clear today, because this is tied right into this whole series that we've been covering.

    There's one thing I want you to know today.

    12:59-13:01

    In heaven, there's no more curse.

    13:04-13:05

    It's gone.

    13:07-13:24

    The curse that we experience on the earth, everything that we have to go through every second of our lives in this fallen world, the consequences of Adam and Eve's sin, and all of the pain and heartache that comes with that.

    Everything associated with the curse is forever gone.

    your outline today with the curse gone, here are three things you'll never do in heaven.

    See Alex, again, about a month and a half or so ago, he told us some things that we'll do in heaven.

    I just want to give you the other side of the coin.

    I want to show you three things that you'll never do in heaven.

    So number one, write this down, face death.

    Face death.

    Look at chapter 22, the first couple of verses.

    It says, "Then the angel showed me..." This is John speaking.

    14:08-14:12

    He's receiving this whole preview from this angel.

    He says, "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb, through the middle of the street of the city.

    14:34-14:41

    Also, on either side of the river, the tree of life, with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month.

    14:42-14:45

    The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

    14:45-14:49

    Stop there. The first thing we see, something you'll never do in heaven, is face death.

    14:52-14:54

    First of all, verse 1 talks about water.

    14:55-14:57

    It talks about the water of life.

    14:57-14:58

    Do you see how it's described?

    14:59-14:59

    Bright as crystal.

    15:00-15:00

    What does that mean?

    15:01-15:05

    That means there's no impurities, there's no pollutants, there's no snake venom.

    15:05-15:11

    It's absolutely 100% pure, clear.

    15:14-15:17

    And he makes a clear point to show us the source.

    Right?

    15:18-15:20

    Where's this river coming from?

    15:20-15:25

    flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

    15:28-15:33

    And it's called the water of life, because in this place, there's no more death.

    15:36-15:43

    This is the expression of life from God, flowing unceasingly.

    15:44-15:49

    Look at the picture that is being painted here.

    15:52-16:04

    You know the water flowed from the cursed lamb on the cross, and here the water is flowing from the glorified lamb on his throne.

    That's the water, but we also saw in verse 2 the tree of life.

    Does that sound familiar?

    We talked about that.

    16:13-16:17

    It was introduced to Genesis chapter two in verse nine.

    It's this tree that was in the middle of Eden.

    16:19-16:30

    And again, we saw in the end of Genesis chapter three, that God, very specifically, God drove them out of the garden of Eden because he did not want them eating from that tree.

    Because God didn't want Adam and Eve to live forever in a fallen state.

    16:40-16:40

    Right?

    16:42-16:48

    So what we see here with the tree of life is God's story with man comes full circle.

    Right?

    Back in Genesis chapter three, God drove Adam and Eve out of the garden.

    But here in Revelation 22, we are all brought back into a garden city.

    17:10-17:21

    And just as in Genesis, the tree of life was taken away from man, now the tree of life is given back.

    Interesting, it says leaves, the leaves were for healing.

    17:27-17:31

    Like, wait a minute, why did, I thought there was no sickness in heaven.

    17:31-17:32

    Well, there's not.

    17:33-17:38

    We're not gonna need healed in the sense of we get a disease or a virus or whatever.

    17:40-17:41

    There's no sickness in heaven.

    17:41-17:45

    A better translation for this could be health giving.

    17:47-17:49

    These leaves were health giving, sort of like vitamins.

    17:50-17:55

    You don't take vitamins to heal an illness, you take vitamins to promote general health.

    17:56-18:00

    So I do believe we will be eating in heaven, it's very clear here.

    But it's not going to be for survival.

    18:04-18:07

    it's going to be for enjoyment.

    18:09-18:14

    So here in Genesis, that's where we were the last few weeks.

    Revelation chapter 22, we have the water of life, and we have the tree of life.

    But you have to see, church, that this is like so much more than a Bob Ross painting, alright?

    18:35-18:42

    The symbolism here that God wants us to experience in His presence is so deep.

    18:42-18:45

    This could be a whole sermon series, we're going to get through this quickly, I promise.

    Water, biblically, is the picture of satisfaction and salvation.

    18:52-18:54

    That's what water symbolizes.

    18:55-18:59

    We can look at a whole lot of passages, I just want to refer you to one where Jesus summed it up.

    19:01-19:28

    Jesus and the woman at the well, he said, "Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again." That's satisfaction, right? Then he goes on to say, "The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life." There's salvation. I could show you so many more passages, but that's the picture that we're seeing. Water is the picture of of satisfaction and salvation.

    You're like, what about the tree?

    19:31-19:33

    What's the tree of life a picture of?

    19:35-19:38

    The tree of life is a picture of everything that is good and right.

    19:39-19:43

    And it is a concept that is used throughout the Bible, especially in Proverbs.

    And you might be shocked to realize how much, I'm just gonna give you a couple examples.

    19:49-19:53

    But the tree of life is this picture, every blessing, everything that's right and good.

    19:54-20:19

    Like for example, Proverbs 3.18, talking about wisdom, says, "She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her." Right, Proverbs 11.30 says, "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life." Proverbs 13.12 says, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, "but a desire fulfilled is a," tell me church, tree of life, you see that?

    20:19-20:28

    It's a picture, everything that's right, Everything that's good, everything that is of God, it's a picture of that, the tree of life.

    Like, well, wait, wait, wait, okay, Jeff.

    If we don't need water and food, why are these things there?

    You're telling me we eat just for enjoyment.

    Like, I think it's more than that.

    I think the reason that we see this river and we see this tree of life is I believe this is an eternal testimony that God is our source of life and goodness.

    But listen, get Alex talked about this and I'm just sort of piggybacking off of that and wanted to, there's so much can be said here.

    Listen, in heaven, you will be totally satisfied in every way, every day, all the time.

    And you know there's people, even in the church, there's people that think they have the spiritual gift of criticism, right?

    And I'm constantly reminding people, that's not a spiritual gift, that's not a fruit of the Spirit.

    It's not in there.

    21:40-21:47

    Even the harshest critic is not going to be walking around heaven going, "Well, you know, it's all right.

    It's all right, but I really think we could spruce the place up a bit with this side or the other.

    You're never going to get over how awesome it is in every way.

    Think of the happiest day that you've had to this point on the earth.

    22:13-22:20

    And every day in heaven is going to be so far beyond that in every way.

    22:21-22:27

    It's not even, not able to compare it to anything, right?

    But with the curse gone, here's something you'll never do.

    22:31-22:32

    You'll never face death.

    22:33-22:37

    Everything is life, abundant life, joyful life.

    22:39-22:39

    You'll never face death.

    22:41-22:44

    Three things you'll never do in heaven, number two is a fine sorrow.

    Fine sorrow.

    Look at verse three.

    We've been talking so much about the curse, right?

    No longer will there be anything accursed.

    Just let that soak in for a second.

    There's no sin, there's no death, and there's no sorrow.

    He doesn't expound on this a lot here because he just did, and I want you to just look back to chapter 21 and verse 4 because he just explained this, and that's why he doesn't I'm not going to really do a deep dive here, but what does it mean?

    23:39-23:42

    That we'll never find sorrow. What does it mean that there's no curse?

    23:43-23:45

    Look at verse 4, it kind of sums it up here in chapter 21, verse 4.

    It says, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more.

    23:56-24:10

    Nor shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more for the former things have passed away." There's no depression.

    24:12-24:13

    There's no discouragement.

    24:16-24:17

    There's no pain.

    24:20-24:20

    There's no cancer.

    24:22-24:23

    There's no diabetes.

    24:26-24:27

    There's no autism.

    24:29-24:30

    There's no organ failure.

    You won't see handicapped parking spaces because there's no wheelchairs.

    There are no mental health problems.

    of the things that ravaged us and beat us down and hurt us never again.

    You will never experience another second of pain for all of your existence.

    is described with the greatest word in the world.

    And I can't get this close to my favorite verse in the Bible and not share it with you, alright?

    But it's the very next verse here in Revelation 21.

    It says, "He who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.' I said, "Write this down.

    "For these words are trustworthy and true." See, it's described with the greatest word ever.

    You're like, "What's heaven like?" I guess the elevator talk version of this, I could give you one word, it's new.

    New, it's the greatest word, new.

    Isn't that awesome?

    New, nothing's better than new, right?

    Because we love new stuff, don't we?

    We love new stuff.

    There's nothing like getting something new, right?

    New shoes, right?

    I heard somebody say the worst part about being an adult is when you get new shoes, people don't ask you, can you run really fast in them?

    I do kind of miss that.

    But new shoes, we love new shoes, don't we?

    How about a new car?

    26:37-26:39

    A new phone, a new computer.

    26:40-26:42

    A new fishing rod, Stephen.

    All right, a new house.

    26:47-26:48

    George, how about a new puppy?

    26:50-26:56

    Maybe this isn't the right day to ask that, but there's nothing like getting something new.

    And heaven is described as everything's new.

    Get back to chapter 22.

    Look at the rest, pick up where we left off in verse 3.

    You see, no longer will there be anything accursed.

    27:17-27:29

    Look, it says, "But the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will worship Him." His servants will worship Him.

    There is no higher privilege than that.

    27:32-27:34

    You're like, "Wait, wait, wait, wait. No higher privilege than what?

    Serving Him or worshipping Him?" The answer is yes, all of the above.

    But I want you to see here that heaven is not just rest and singing, despite what you may have seen in a far side cartoon where the guy's just sitting on the cloud with his harp.

    That is a terrible depiction of heaven.

    And it's shocking to me, but over the years, I've had people say to me, can you tell me more about heaven?

    Because honestly, it sounds kind of boring to me.

    And I'm like, boring?

    Boring?

    28:16-28:16

    What?

    28:17-28:20

    Well, that's what happens when you get your ideas of heaven from pop culture.

    And these stupid cartoons, boring.

    You think that's what God has for you, boring.

    Even in verse three right here, I see productivity.

    We're still called servants.

    28:36-28:37

    Do you see that?

    We're still called servants.

    You're like, well, how are we going to serve?

    28:41-28:41

    I don't know.

    28:42-28:43

    We'll find out together, right?

    But I'm hoping, and I can't say this for sure, but I'm hoping in heaven that we will get new talents and new abilities, because I am so gonna be out of a job in heaven.

    29:00-29:03

    I'm just gonna be walking around like, hey, can I tell you about Jesus?

    29:03-29:06

    And they're like, yeah, we know that's why we're here.

    29:07-29:09

    Like, all right, well, if you change your mind, I'll just be.

    29:11-29:13

    Like, dude, we get it.

    29:13-29:14

    We get it.

    29:14-29:15

    He's right there.

    29:16-29:17

    We know Jesus, right?

    29:17-29:24

    And so I'm hoping, I'm hoping so much when I get to heaven, I can play the drums.

    Even if I can just be like the gong player in the heavenly band, something, please.

    I don't know.

    29:38-29:42

    But see, being called servants means that there's productivity.

    29:43-29:44

    There's stuff happening.

    29:44-29:46

    But here's the thing that's really exciting to me about that.

    29:48-29:52

    With the curse gone, you know what else is gone?

    29:54-29:54

    Entropy.

    29:55-29:59

    You know, second law of thermodynamics, Everything is moving from order to disorder.

    29:59-30:01

    Everything's decaying, wearing out.

    30:01-30:03

    That is a law, right?

    30:04-30:05

    We see that all around us.

    30:05-30:07

    In heaven with the curse gone, there's no entropy.

    30:08-30:14

    So, every project completed is going to last for eternity.

    30:15-30:17

    It's not gonna wear out.

    30:18-30:19

    It's not gonna rust away.

    30:20-30:22

    Everything built will last.

    30:24-30:28

    Try to wrap your brain around the ramifications of that, because I sure can't.

    30:33-30:34

    But listen, church.

    30:37-30:39

    Someday sorrow will be gone.

    30:41-30:45

    So my encouragement to you is to soak it up here.

    30:46-30:49

    Soak up as much sorrow as you can here.

    30:50-30:54

    your worst day, just be like, "Ahh, sorrow!

    30:55-30:58

    I'm not going to miss you, but I'm going to have you while I'm here.

    30:58-31:02

    Soak it up!" Because someday it's going to be behind you forever.

    31:05-31:07

    Something you'll never do in heaven is find sorrow.

    31:07-31:12

    And finally, three things you'll never do in heaven.

    31:13-31:16

    Number three is feel alone. Feel alone.

    31:20-31:21

    Look at verse 4.

    31:24-31:32

    It says, "They will see His face." Again, that could be one of those statements when we read the Bible, we just kind of skim past that.

    31:33-31:35

    You can't rush past a statement like that.

    31:36-31:39

    Do you realize biblically how huge that statement is?

    31:39-31:41

    "They will see His face." Do you know what that means?

    31:42-31:46

    Even Moses, who was like tight with God.

    31:46-31:52

    Do you remember back in Exodus 33, verses 20 and 23?

    31:52-31:56

    You can look that up later, not now, but Moses was restricted in seeing God.

    31:56-31:57

    And listen to what God said.

    31:57-32:05

    He said, "Man shall not see me and live." He says, "But Moses, you can see my back." That was all Moses got.

    32:06-32:08

    And even the high priest.

    32:08-32:18

    I mean, he was restricted to being in God's personal presence, His Shekinah glory, Hebrews 9.7, just one day a year for the sacrifice.

    32:19-32:20

    Leviticus 16, Day of Atonement.

    32:22-32:24

    Even the high priest was so restricted.

    32:27-32:39

    Right here, your Bible says, "But we will see His face." The lamb is always accessible.

    32:40-32:43

    He goes on to say, and his name will be on their foreheads.

    32:44-32:46

    Like, what does that look like?

    32:46-32:47

    Is that some kind of a seal?

    32:48-32:49

    Is that some kind of a tattoo?

    32:50-32:55

    Is it like a plate hanging from the crown and the name is on the plate?

    32:55-32:57

    I don't know, we'll find out together.

    33:00-33:05

    But whatever, however that looks, here's the point, there's never going to be a doubt who we belong to.

    33:07-33:10

    Because His name is going to be on us.

    33:13-33:15

    And the last verse, look at verse 5.

    33:17-33:19

    It says, "A night will be no more.

    33:21-33:24

    They will need no light of lamp or sun.

    33:27-33:29

    For the Lord God will be their light.

    33:31-33:32

    And they will reign forever and ever.

    33:34-33:37

    no darkness, no night.

    33:42-33:44

    We will walk in the light of the Lord.

    33:47-33:53

    You know, in the very beginning, like the beginning, in the beginning, there was light apart from sun, remember?

    33:54-33:56

    Light was created before the sun.

    33:58-34:05

    And apparently, speaking of going full circle, God's gonna bring us back to.

    34:06-34:07

    There's not gonna be a son.

    34:08-34:09

    He will be our light.

    34:12-34:14

    It says, we will, look at this last phrase.

    34:14-34:17

    It says, reign forever and ever.

    34:20-34:21

    Let me ask you this.

    34:23-34:25

    Do you ever get tired of the leadership that we're under right now?

    34:27-34:28

    Anyone?

    34:29-34:30

    Anyone at all?

    34:31-34:39

    Anyone get frustrated with the leadership that we have in our state, in our country?

    34:39-34:40

    Anyone?

    34:41-34:45

    Okay, I was gonna say, wow, wow, just me, awesome.

    Look, I'm not making a political statement, I'm not endorsing a political party, but I'm just saying I am really sick of some of the antics of the leadership.

    Well, you think you can do better?

    35:05-35:07

    Because you'll get a chance to, right here it says that.

    35:07-35:10

    We will reign with Jesus Christ.

    35:13-35:24

    In, now this is going to be something that we really need to stretch our imaginations here, but imagine this, we will reign with Him in a holy and sinless kingdom.

    35:29-35:38

    There will be no corruption or ballot stuffing or quid pro quo or any of this other stuff. None of that.

    35:39-35:41

    A perfect righteous kingdom.

    35:44-35:48

    We will reign with Him forever and ever.

    35:48-35:51

    Never end. It'll never end.

    35:54-35:59

    You know, sometimes God seems distant, doesn't he?

    36:01-36:07

    I mean, he's not, but doesn't it sometimes feel that way?

    36:09-36:11

    Don't we sometimes feel alone?

    36:14-36:15

    I know I do.

    36:19-36:24

    We go through trials, we're hurting, and we need comforted.

    36:26-36:35

    We feel betrayed, we're disappointed, we're let down, we're exhausted, and we feel like, where are you God?

    36:38-36:39

    You ever felt that?

    36:40-36:41

    I sure do sometimes.

    36:42-36:44

    God, you see what's happening here.

    36:44-36:45

    Where are you?

    36:46-36:59

    Any moment you wanna step in, please, And here's what we're seeing in heaven.

    37:00-37:02

    Never again will God seem distant.

    37:05-37:07

    Never again will we feel alone.

    37:08-37:11

    We will see His face. He's right there.

    37:14-37:15

    And we will reign with Him.

    37:16-37:24

    So, we've been talking a lot about the curse.

    37:26-37:34

    Especially on Good Friday, we saw from Galatians that Jesus became a curse for us on the cross.

    37:36-37:42

    And when you believe in Jesus Christ, you are no longer cursed.

    37:42-37:54

    Even though, for now, we still live in fallen bodies, we still live in a cursed world, but things will not always be as they are now.

    37:55-38:04

    Because this is what's waiting for God's people.

    38:04-38:08

    This is what Jesus is preparing for us right now.

    38:10-38:11

    There's no death.

    38:14-38:15

    There's no sorrow.

    38:17-38:27

    There's no feeling alone, as you are forever walking in the light of God.

    38:29-38:49

    You know, I was thinking about these concepts this week, you know, no death, no sorrow, no feeling alone, living forever in the light of God, And then it hit me suddenly that, you know, the Bible describes hell as the complete antithesis of all of these things, right?

    38:49-38:52

    Like we said, in heaven there's no death. Do you know what hell is?

    38:53-38:54

    Hell is eternally dying.

    38:57-39:00

    We see here that there's no sorrow in heaven.

    39:00-39:02

    Do you know how hell is described in the Bible?

    39:02-39:05

    A place of weeping. A place of eternal sorrow.

    39:10-39:16

    Here we see that we walk forever in the light of God, and hell is described as what?

    39:17-39:18

    Outer darkness.

    39:21-39:28

    And I think I would be doing us a disservice without giving an invite at this point.

    39:29-39:36

    Look, we can read all about heaven, and get all excited about what's in store.

    39:39-39:53

    But if you haven't personally received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, if you haven't bowed your knee to Him on your face, crying out, saying, "Please, "forgive me for all of my sins.

    39:53-39:56

    "I know that you died on the cross to take my sins away.

    39:56-40:00

    "I believe that you rose from the dead "so that I might have eternal life.

    40:00-40:07

    "I want to receive you." Listen, if you haven't done that, biblically you are still under the curse.

    40:08-40:10

    And hell is what is waiting for you.

    40:14-40:31

    Still under the curse. That's why 1 Corinthians 16.22 says this, "If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed." Our Lord come.

    40:35-40:45

    Heaven or hell, one of these destinations awaits you after you take your final breath.

    40:49-40:55

    Today can be the day that you cry out to Jesus for your place in heaven.

    40:56-40:58

    I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please.

    41:03-41:08

    We don't want to get excited about a place that we'll never see.

    41:10-41:18

    You know, some people think, "Well, I'm going to start going to church, and I'm going to try to be a good person, and I'm going to do this..." and none of those things will get you to heaven.

    41:20-41:26

    Because the fact remains that we're all sinners by nature, and we've sinned in the face of a holy God.

    41:31-41:36

    And that's the point of God's Word, is He remedied this.

    41:37-41:45

    Just like He made skins for Adam and Eve to make a permanent covering when they couldn't do that.

    41:48-41:54

    God made a permanent covering for us, and not even just covering our sin, He took our sin away in Jesus Christ.

    41:58-42:05

    And if you have never received Him, let today be the day.

    42:11-42:17

    Again, you just have to pray something like this, "God, I realize I have been far from You.

    42:18-42:22

    And God, I haven't really cared much about You, I haven't been living for You.

    42:23-42:28

    I've been kind of living for myself and in my sin.

    42:31-42:33

    God, I realize that I am a sinner.

    42:38-42:41

    And I see, Father, that You sent Jesus Christ to die for me.

    42:43-42:45

    That's why Jesus was on the cross.

    42:45-42:47

    He didn't die for His own sin because He didn't commit any.

    42:49-43:20

    for my sin. You would send your Son to die for me. I believe that you did that to take away my sin and I believe that He rose from the dead, proving that He's God and giving us the hope of eternal life, that that empty tomb is our receipt. He is alive and promised I will be too.

    43:24-43:32

    If you've prayed that today, or something like that, I want you to come and see me in guest reception after service.

    I want you to go to the other corner of the room where the big prayer sign is, and maybe you need to take that step, maybe you'd like somebody to pray with you, Any of us would be happy to do that.

    I can't possibly tell you how awesome heaven is going to be.

    We just get almost a quick one second peek behind the curtain in God's Word because it's going to be so much greater and more glorious, I think, than we can ever describe with human words.

    And you can enjoy that place too, thanks to Jesus Christ.

    So come and see me.

    And if you have prayed this, if you have received Jesus Christ, He calls you to make your profession of faith public through baptism.

    That it's your opportunity to stand before God and before man and say, "I belong to Jesus Christ. I'm not ashamed to admit that.

    He died for me. He lives in me.

    We thank You for this peak behind the curtain.

    And I just ask, Father, for a place so glorious that we would be consumed with knowing the God who is preparing this place, who died so we could go to this place.

    Father, let our lives be about serving You and worshiping You and loving You now in preparation for when we will do all of these things before You face to face.

    Okay, so you have this teenage son.

    I want you to imagine this teenage son goes to a party, and at this party, there is a classmate of his that just hates your son for whatever reason.

    He just, he hates your son.

    And he, this other boy lies in ambush, and when your son shows up, this other boy jumps out and viciously sneak attack.

    He murders your son.

    01:52-01:52

    Okay?

    Now if you track that murderous boy down and you kill him, that's called vengeance.

    Or if you track that murderous boy down and you cooperate with the police and you make sure that he goes to trial and he's punished for what he did to your son, that's called justice. Or, we're pretending, let's say it goes to trial, and somehow you're able to convince the judge and the jury to let him go, out the door. No punishment. That's called Oh, mercy.

    But, at the trial, let's say somehow you convince the judge to allow you to take that boy who murdered your son, you convince that judge to allow you to take that boy home, and you raise him as if he were your son, and you love him, and you encourage him, And you do everything for Him as if He was your own flesh and blood.

    That's called grace.

    I love that little illustration because it helps me understand some terms.

    I'm going to be honest with you.

    Usually when I think about it, I identify with the parent.

    One of them is turning 16 today.

    The truth be told, church, in that illustration, we're not the parent.

    We're the kid that murdered the son in that illustration.

    Because of our sin, in a real sense, we are responsible for Jesus' death.

    He went to the cross not for His sin.

    He went to the cross for our sin.

    And the Father adopted us.

    Because of Jesus Christ, church, this is why we celebrate today.

    Not just today, we celebrate this every week, don't we?

    But through Jesus Christ, not only can we be forgiven of our sin, that's mercy, we can be adopted as children of God.

    John 1:12 says, "For those who received Him, for those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.

    Our church has been going through this series the past few weeks called Foundations.

    It's a Theology 101 series because this stuff is important.

    We started with creation, right?

    04:49-04:53

    Nothing else really matters if we don't believe the first verse of God's Word.

    We talked about creation and we talked about how God created the perfect relationship, and woman, husband and wife.

    05:04-05:05

    And then we talked about sin.

    05:06-05:10

    And a couple of days ago we talked about the consequences of sin.

    05:11-05:12

    We talked about the curse.

    05:13-05:20

    And while Jesus Christ was on the cross, the Bible says He literally became a curse for us.

    05:21-05:31

    And the amazing thing about all of these foundational things to me, of all the truths that we've looked at over the past few weeks, This could be the most amazing thing.

    05:32-05:41

    As soon as man falls, as soon as man sins, God immediately goes to work to redeem him.

    05:43-05:49

    We know the whole story because of the side of history in which we live, right?

    05:49-05:52

    We live on the other side of the cross.

    05:53-05:55

    We live on the other side of the empty tomb.

    05:55-05:56

    We know the whole story.

    05:56-06:06

    In fact, our church just finished a series in the Gospel of John called "Knowing Jesus." And we know the story.

    We know that Jesus Christ died on that cross for our sins.

    06:11-06:14

    We know that He rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    06:14-06:20

    And we know right now, Jesus Christ is ruling in the lives of those who receive Him.

    06:21-06:34

    And everything we celebrate about Jesus, everything that God has given us in Jesus, we actually find the foundation for those things in the Garden of Eden.

    Because we're going to be completely honest here, as we are every week.

    06:40-06:55

    But yes, Jesus died, Jesus rose from the dead, but honestly, those truths mean nothing to you without biblical faith.

    And I'm talking today about real biblical faith.

    You see, on Friday I talked about how Good Friday Service sort of carries this heaviness of sorrow, and that's natural!

    An innocent man was betrayed and falsely accused and horribly executed, and we talked about how the cross is so much deeper than sympathy for a man who died for a cause.

    It's so much deeper than that.

    07:27-07:28

    And I would say the same thing today.

    07:29-07:35

    Because this type of service naturally carries with it another type of emotion, doesn't it?

    07:36-07:41

    Because we all come to church and it's morning and it's bright, and we're going to see a bunch of new people here.

    07:43-07:45

    And we all have new shirts on.

    07:47-07:49

    But you see what I'm saying.

    This carries a whole different atmosphere, doesn't it?

    And there's excitement this morning, and there should be!

    But you can't just reduce this another feeling of sentimentality. There has to be real biblical faith or this doesn't mean anything to you. Like, "Yay, Jesus!" No! This is so much more than that.

    And that's what I want to talk about today.

    Alright? What is faith? Do you have it? Because if I pulled the room right now, I I guarantee you, 100% of you would say, "Yes, I believe." Every one of you.

    And if we were able to reach out and poll every single person that watches this stream, "Do you believe?" Every single one would say, "Yeah, I believe." But what does that even mean to believe?

    Because biblically, it might not mean what you think it means.

    So in your outline today, the Gospel in the Garden, Three Foundations of Faith.

    Everything that faith means we find right here in this account, right off the bat.

    What does it mean to believe?

    What is the gospel?

    What is faith?

    Here it is, number one, write this down.

    Faith is believing God's promise.

    Believe God's promise.

    Now as we talk about faith, the most simple definition of faith, like if you're like, "Just make it as easy as possible," it's this.

    Faith is believing God's Word.

    09:36-09:36

    That's what faith is.

    09:38-09:39

    God said it, I believe it.

    09:41-09:53

    And Adam and his wife, we've seen through this story, they believed God until the serpent came along, Satan in the form of a serpent, he got them to believe the lie.

    Satan convinced Eve and Adam was with her, "Hey, hey, hey, God's holding out on you.

    Did you know that?

    10:03-10:44

    God's holding out on you." They stopped believing God started believing the lie. They experienced perfection. They experienced God's perfect grace and provision and love and presence and they stopped trusting Him. And now as we saw on Friday, they're cursed. They're dying. Look at verse 20, after God pronounces the curse, ending with, by the way, death. Look at the last line of verse 19. He says, "For you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Adam, you're going to die. Your life is going to be painful and temporary.

    Look at the response to that. You can't miss this. This isn't an accident.

    This is the very next verse. Verse 20 says, "The man called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living." So Adam, we saw that he got to name the animals And here, Adam got to name his wife.

    So husbands, let me ask you, if it were up to you, what would you name your wife?

    This is a really smart room.

    11:26-11:32

    I want you to notice that nobody shouted out any suggestions, but there's a lot of men shifting and sweating right now.

    Smart. You're smart.

    11:36-11:36

    You're smart.

    11:39-11:40

    Anyways, back to Adam.

    11:40-11:41

    He got to name her.

    11:42-11:44

    And he named her Eve.

    11:45-11:46

    You know what Eve means?

    11:47-11:48

    It means life.

    11:50-11:51

    And that is so significant.

    11:52-11:58

    As God just pronounced death on them, Adam named his wife Life.

    11:59-12:00

    Like, why would he do that?

    12:01-12:07

    Well, first of all, the command to multiply and fill the earth was not voided because of the fall.

    And this, Adam, he believed what God said.

    12:12-12:19

    Back in verse 15, God said that one of Eve's offspring was going to crush the serpent.

    12:20-12:26

    And what you see here is Adam, bless you, believing the Word of God.

    12:27-12:30

    Because remember, at this point in history, no one was born yet.

    12:31-12:38

    So the very fact that Adam names his wife, "wife", demonstrates that Adam believed God.

    12:38-12:42

    In other words, it demonstrates that Adam had faith.

    12:43-12:44

    You know, faith is the same for us.

    12:45-12:56

    Even though, as I said, we live on the other end of the timeline, even though that we are on the other side of the cross and the tomb, faith is the same thing for us.

    And I'd like to remind you, when it comes to faith, whether it's our faith or Adam's faith, everybody who is saved, everybody who is in heaven or ultimately will be in heaven, it's thanks to Jesus Christ, okay?

    We look back on what God accomplished in the past and our faith is based on a past event.

    13:19-13:24

    The person, our faith is on the person, but we're looking at what he did in the past.

    13:24-13:27

    You see in the Old Testament, they were looking ahead.

    Their faith was based on what God would do in Jesus, just as our faith is based on what God has done in Jesus.

    But everybody in heaven is walking around there because of Jesus Christ, glorifying him, all right?

    But appropriating that salvation, our part of that is faith, and that is believing God's promise.

    Like, well, what does it mean to believe?

    Like, what does it mean to believe?

    And this is where a lot of people miss it.

    What does it mean to believe?

    If you've ever come to me for any type of counseling or talk of any kind, we talk about this, but there's really three levels of belief.

    And the first level is knowing some facts, right?

    14:21-14:29

    Like if I said to you, hey, this chair that Evan brought me will hold an adult that sits down in it.

    14:30-14:32

    Now you have facts, you know something, I told you something.

    14:33-14:34

    That's the first level of belief.

    14:35-14:39

    The second level of belief is agreeing with the facts.

    14:39-14:46

    You know something and the second level is, you know what, yeah, I'll go with that.

    14:46-14:47

    I agree with that.

    14:48-14:49

    That's the second level of belief.

    14:50-14:52

    But see, here's the problem, That's where a lot of people stop.

    14:52-14:56

    And there's so many people sitting in churches that think that that is the requirement.

    14:57-15:00

    That look, I know Jesus died and he rose from the dead.

    15:00-15:02

    You know, I even agree with that.

    15:02-15:02

    I'm not against it.

    15:02-15:05

    I mean, I'm sitting in church, and I mean, I'm not against it.

    15:05-15:08

    But listen, that is not biblical faith.

    15:08-15:10

    You know what biblical faith looks like?

    15:10-15:11

    It's level three.

    15:12-15:13

    It's resting in what I know.

    15:14-15:14

    It's trusting.

    15:16-15:25

    You see, I know that this chair will hold, I agree that this chair will hold me, but it's not really faith until I sit down in a chair and let it hold me.

    15:26-15:33

    In other words, faith biblically isn't really faith until it acts upon what it knows.

    15:34-15:35

    That's faith.

    15:35-15:37

    You have to go all the way like Adam did.

    15:38-15:39

    We know that Adam believed.

    15:40-15:40

    How do we know?

    15:40-15:44

    Because we see right here he acted on God's promise.

    15:45-15:48

    God says he's going to have an offspring, eventually, that's going to crush Satan.

    15:48-15:51

    And Adam's like, "Well, then I'm going to name her Life.

    15:51-16:00

    That's what I'm going to name her because of what is going to happen through our eventual offspring." Do you believe that Jesus Christ died for your sins?

    16:02-16:05

    Do you believe that He rose to give you eternal life?

    16:08-16:10

    Do you believe God's Word?

    16:12-16:16

    It's not enough to just know some facts and nod your head during a sermon.

    16:17-16:21

    Like Adam, you have to go all the way and act on what you know.

    16:22-16:23

    That's what it means to believe.

    16:23-16:33

    And if you say you have faith and it doesn't show up in your life at all, not in your home, not in your workplace, not in your private time, not...

    16:34-16:36

    Jesus Christ doesn't make...

    16:36-16:38

    He doesn't affect any decisions that you make.

    16:38-16:40

    Then you don't have faith biblically.

    16:40-16:43

    Today's the day that can change for you.

    16:43-16:50

    Today's the day that spiritually maybe you can sit in the chair instead of just knowing some facts about a chair, all right?

    16:50-16:51

    Believe God's promise.

    16:51-16:54

    Secondly, second foundation of faith is receive God's provision.

    16:55-16:56

    Receive God's provision.

    16:56-16:57

    Look at verse 21.

    16:57-17:09

    It says, "And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife "garments of skins and clothed them." Remember we talked about grace in the beginning?

    17:09-17:10

    This is grace.

    17:11-17:12

    God should have killed them.

    17:13-17:13

    And what did He do?

    17:14-17:14

    He covered them.

    17:15-17:16

    That's grace.

    17:16-17:25

    Quick review, back in chapter 2, verse 25, before the fall, it says that they were naked and not ashamed, never had a thought about it.

    17:25-17:31

    But then after they sinned, chapter 3, verse 7, it says they were naked and ashamed.

    17:32-17:33

    And we talked about that.

    17:33-17:39

    There's a certain shame that's tied into sexuality that came as a result of the fall.

    17:39-17:46

    and now the only two people on the planet who had only ever seen each other naked, now all of a sudden they have to cover themselves up.

    17:48-17:52

    This is what we said about that, what we saw from God's Word.

    17:53-18:00

    They made loincloths out of fig leaves, the Bible says.

    18:01-18:15

    And I asked you, "How long do underpants made out of leaves last?" And I also said that man's attempts to cover shame are futile, but sin always makes us want to try.

    18:16-18:25

    And I wanted to remind you of those things, because right here it says that God made them permanent coverings out of animal skins.

    18:26-18:33

    Look at the language used in God's Word, "skins." You know what that means? You know why that's important?

    18:34-18:37

    God didn't use wool. See the difference?

    18:38-18:46

    God didn't grab a sheep and some clippers, say, "I'm going to make you a nice sweater." See, a sheep can donate to wool without dying.

    18:46-18:50

    But an animal can't donate skin and live.

    18:51-18:52

    You see what's happening here?

    18:53-18:54

    Is it connecting?

    18:57-19:01

    God killed an animal to make a covering.

    19:02-19:05

    for Adam and Eve's sin and shame.

    You're seeing a connection?

    19:10-19:12

    But you've got to stop here for a second and think.

    God killing an animal, what do you think that looked like to Adam and Eve?

    19:17-19:20

    Because at this point, they'd never seen anything like that.

    Never.

    Everything was beautiful and harmonious and life and...

    What?

    Could you imagine?

    19:30-19:32

    Could you imagine what that looked like?

    You know, last week, my son Cade came to me, and he said, "Dad, one of the chickens is dead." And I'm thinking, like, you know, "Are you sure?" I'm like, "So what's going on?" He goes, "Well, I went up to feed the chickens, and there's feathers everywhere." I'm like, "Well, feathers everywhere doesn't mean a dead chicken." I'm like, "Maybe not." I said, "So there's feathers everywhere." I said, "Are we sure that it's dead?" He's like, "Well, I, um, I, he, I, I..." He goes, "Dad, I don't see a head anywhere."

    I'm like, "Let me get my shoes."

    So I went up to the chicken coop and the door has this wood frame.

    We have like chicken wire on the frame, right?

    and a piece of the chicken wire came detached from the frame, just like a little flat.

    And long story short, something grabbed the chicken and tried to pull it out that hole, but the chicken was bigger than the hole.

    So what the predator decided to do in that moment was eat what it could right there, which was the head.

    20:56-21:04

    and down into the chicken, kind of hollowed it out mostly, couldn't take the rest and just left it.

    21:05-21:07

    Like I was gonna take this meal to go, but I'm gonna eat it.

    Do you know how grisly that was?

    21:12-21:14

    Do you wanna see a picture of that?

    21:14-21:18

    You wanna see, no, you don't wanna see a picture of that, what's the matter with you?

    I just told you how gross it was.

    21:20-21:21

    It was horrifying.

    21:24-21:37

    And I would have said, okay, before you send the nasty emails, like, "That was inappropriate, Pastor Jeff, that you told that story." You're going to go out and you're going to have like 20 chicken wings for lunch and not think a thing of it.

    And some poor little precious starving raccoon eats one chicken and I'm the monster all of a sudden.

    21:44-21:47

    But you see my point, it was a horrific scene.

    21:48-21:53

    And I was thinking about that, like, What do you think that looked like to Adam and Eve when they saw the first death?

    What just happened?

    21:59-22:03

    I mean, they knew of death, but to actually see it is another story.

    22:04-22:06

    What you have to understand, church, is this.

    22:06-22:10

    God making for Adam and his wife garments of skins.

    22:10-22:13

    Do you understand that this is more than about clothes?

    22:15-22:20

    What this is is a profound foreshadowing of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    22:20-22:43

    And that is this, listen, "Those sinned against God initiated His grace by killing an innocent substitute which provided a permanent covering of their shame, accomplishing what man could not." This, look at your Bible, this was God's idea.

    22:45-22:53

    God chose the animal, and then God killed the animal, and then God covered them with the animal.

    22:54-22:56

    And the cross of Jesus Christ is the same thing.

    22:57-22:58

    It was God's idea.

    23:00-23:02

    God chose the sacrifice again.

    23:03-23:04

    This time it was His Son.

    23:05-23:07

    And then on the cross, God killed Him.

    23:08-23:09

    Make no mistake.

    23:10-23:14

    God was the one who killed him.

    23:15-23:21

    Isaiah 53 tells you that the Lord crushed him for our sin.

    And you see, Adam and Eve, here's the connection, church.

    Listen, Adam and Eve needed to receive God's provision, because their attempt at covering their sin and shame, leafy britches wouldn't last. Right? And I've never tried it, but if you were to sew underpants out of leaves, yeah, when you get them right off the tree, they're kind of soft and, you know, we can work with this, but what happens to a leaf after a couple of days? It shrivels up, doesn't it? What do you think happens if you You have a pair of britches made out of leaves and you sit down.

    Dust, right?

    24:09-24:17

    That was the best Adam and Eve could come up with until God made provision that Adam and Eve had to receive.

    24:20-24:21

    God did all the work.

    24:21-24:24

    Their job by faith was to receive what He provided.

    24:25-24:34

    I suppose, hypothetically, Adam and Eve could have taken the skins off and put their leaves back on.

    24:35-24:39

    And so, you know, hypothetically, it didn't happen, but hypothetically, right?

    24:39-24:50

    They could have said, "You know what, God? Appreciate the gesture, but we're going to do it our way." And how foolish that would have been, and how completely ineffective that would have been, right?

    24:53-25:04

    And if that actually is what happened, I know we'd be sitting here today going, "Man, that was awfully dumb of them to reject God's provision and try to do it themselves.

    25:05-25:06

    That was awfully stupid of them.

    25:07-25:11

    Why would anybody reject God's provision because it was perfect and it was permanent?

    25:11-25:23

    Why would somebody insist on doing things their way?" And as foolish as people might think that notion would be, that still is happening right now.

    25:27-25:34

    There are still people right here that are rejecting God's provision.

    25:35-25:41

    There are still people right here that instead think they can get to heaven their way, like through good works.

    25:42-25:48

    I've done enough good stuff. I've done enough good stuff, Pastor Jeff, and someday when I die, God's gonna look at all the good stuff that I've done.

    25:48-25:52

    You know what your good stuff is? Leafy britches. That's what it is.

    25:53-25:56

    And you're like, "You know what, Pastor Jeff? You see me at church.

    25:56-26:02

    I'm really involved in church. I have pretty good church attendance." And I'm not just like here. I'm like, I actually get involved.

    26:02-26:06

    And someday when I die, God's gonna see that I was involved at the church.

    26:06-26:13

    And when it comes to your salvation, do you know what your church attendance and involvement amount to?

    26:14-26:15

    Tell me.

    26:16-26:17

    Leafy britches.

    26:20-26:21

    Or for some people, it's being a moral person.

    26:23-26:26

    All I know, Jeff, is that really bad people go to hell, but not me.

    26:26-26:32

    Like, I've always tried to do the right thing, Pastor Jeff.

    26:32-26:35

    I've always been kind of a moral person.

    26:35-26:42

    I've never hurt anyone. I'm just, I'm a good person deep down, deep down in my heart, deep down where I'm soft like a woman.

    26:42-26:44

    I've always been a really moral person.

    26:47-26:54

    And some people think they're in here in goodness, which they actually don't have, but they think that that's what's going to get them to heaven.

    26:55-26:59

    Your morality amounts to nothing more than what, church?

    27:01-27:01

    Leafy britches.

    27:03-27:09

    If you're trusting these types of things, any work on your part to save you, it can't do it.

    27:10-27:13

    Like Adam and Eve, listen, here's what you need to do.

    27:13-27:15

    You need to receive the provision that God made for you.

    27:18-27:20

    It's the sacrifice of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ.

    27:21-27:25

    And finally, the gospel in the garden, three foundations of faith.

    27:26-27:30

    Last and certainly not least, you've got to believe God's Word, you've got to receive God's provision.

    27:31-27:39

    But then, when you do those things, and when the rubber meets the road, you've got to catch this, you've got to trust God's path.

    27:40-27:41

    You've got to trust God's path.

    27:42-27:48

    We already said that back in verse 15, God made the promise of a Savior.

    27:48-27:51

    And then in verse 21, He provided atonement.

    27:51-28:04

    And now, what you're going to see is God acting— don't miss this, because this is kind of a— if you miss this, you're going to say, "What in the world is going on here?" What God is doing is acting to protect Adam and Eve.

    28:05-28:07

    That's what's happening here. God is protecting them.

    28:07-28:11

    Look at verse 22, because it makes it so clear here. Look at this.

    28:11-28:24

    It says, "Then the Lord God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of us, and knowing good and evil.'" All right, we talked about this.

    28:24-28:28

    God knows good and evil perfectly, but God is incorruptible.

    28:28-28:32

    And now man knows good and evil, but is thoroughly corrupted.

    28:33-28:34

    Right? We talked about this.

    28:36-28:38

    Look at this. Here's the protection.

    28:39-28:50

    It says, "Now, lest he reach out his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever..." And then he does something, but hang on a second.

    28:51-28:54

    Yes, man knows good and evil, not the same way God does.

    28:54-28:56

    He's incorruptible. We are corrupted.

    28:56-29:03

    But now, here's the point, Adam and Eve saw death when God killed the animal.

    29:06-29:17

    And now they would be tempted to avoid that themselves by eating from the tree of life to live forever.

    29:19-29:21

    Why shouldn't they eat off the tree of life?

    29:22-29:23

    Here's why.

    29:24-29:30

    Because if Adam and Eve ate off of the tree of life in the state that they were in, they would have been eternally evil.

    29:31-29:34

    In other words, they would have been stuck in that state forever.

    29:36-29:37

    And do you know what it's called?

    29:39-29:43

    To be forever stuck in a state of corruption.

    29:43-29:44

    Do you know what that's called?

    29:45-29:45

    That's hell.

    29:47-29:48

    That's hell.

    29:50-29:54

    And you see, God very clearly says, "I don't want that for them.

    29:56-30:11

    I don't want them stuck in this state of fallenness." So, verse 23, "Therefore the Lord God sent them out from the garden of Eden to work the ground from which He was taken.

    30:13-30:30

    He drove out the man, and at the east of the garden of Eden he placed a cherubim and a flaming sword that turned every way to guard the way to the tree of life." You're like, "What's going on here?" Here's what's going on.

    30:31-30:35

    God drove them out of Eden to prevent permanent harm.

    30:36-30:44

    Interestingly, where it says in verse 24, "He drove them out." That's a very, very strong word in the Hebrew.

    30:46-31:11

    In other words, it wasn't like, "Sir, ma'am, I'm going to have to ask you to leave." This was grabbed by the scruff of the neck and the seat of the pants, and "Out! Go! You are not going to be here anymore! Driven out!" And then he posted an armed guard to block the way to the Tree of Life.

    31:13-31:14

    There's no going back there for them.

    31:16-31:27

    And you're like, "Boy, that's bad." And I want us to think about this for a second.

    31:30-31:35

    Adam and Eve were put on a path of suffering.

    31:38-31:53

    And as forceful as God was about this, throwing them out, posting the angel and the sword, as forceful as God was about that, it was for their own good.

    31:57-32:07

    And I want you to see something very clearly, because this is where theology goes so applicational.

    32:07-32:14

    Look at this. God very clearly didn't give them what they wanted.

    32:16-32:23

    He knew if they had access to the tree of life, that that's all they would want.

    32:26-32:38

    God did not give them what they wanted, instead He drove them out to suffer, because that would not only prevent permanent harm, but instead it would bring ultimate blessing.

    32:40-32:44

    And this is a fundamental truth that...

    32:44-32:48

    This is where we need to hit, church. All of us. All of us.

    32:50-32:53

    Listen, we too find ourselves on paths that we don't want to be on.

    32:55-32:56

    Anybody testify to that?

    32:59-33:00

    Can anybody right now say, "Hey, you know what?

    33:01-33:04

    You know what, Jeff? Yeah, I'm on a path that I don't want to be on right now.

    33:05-33:16

    I'm going through some serious pain and some serious suffering, and I don't like this, and I have prayed about this, and I have tried this, and I'm miserable right now.

    33:18-33:23

    And sometimes we too find God not giving us what we want.

    33:24-33:43

    And I just want to ask, church, is it possible that, like Adam and Eve, In this whole story, is it possible that God knows what is better for us than even we do?

    33:44-33:44

    Is that possible?

    33:46-33:52

    Is it possible that what looks like hardship from God is actually a profound act of love?

    33:54-33:54

    Is that possible?

    33:56-33:57

    I suppose we could ask Jesus.

    33:59-34:01

    Do you know before He was crucified, the Bible says He prayed?

    34:03-34:07

    He prayed so fervently that He was sweating blood.

    34:07-34:09

    Do you remember what He was praying for?

    34:10-34:19

    "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me." Did the Father give Him what He was praying for?

    34:20-34:20

    He didn't.

    34:21-34:28

    Jesus said, "Nevertheless, not My will, but Your will be done." But you have to see, the cup didn't pass from Jesus.

    34:28-34:34

    And instead, He was driven to suffer on the cross.

    34:35-34:39

    So let me ask you, did any blessing come from that?

    34:40-34:43

    Did any blessing come from what Jesus accomplished on the cross?

    34:45-34:47

    Any blessing at all? Can you think of anything?

    34:49-34:53

    Well, if you can't think of one, allow me to submit this one.

    34:54-35:11

    That the blessing came three days later, when the Lamb of God triumphantly emerged from the tomb, defeating death and defeating Satan and defeating sin and guaranteeing our resurrection and eternal life for everyone who would receive Him.

    35:14-35:15

    So you know what that tells me?

    35:18-35:37

    When I look at the garden of Eden, and I look at the garden of Gethsemane, I see that sometimes God doesn't give me everything that I pray for, and instead drives me to a place of suffering.

    35:38-35:40

    But in these cases, it was for ultimate blessing.

    35:41-35:45

    Is it possible that it's going to be a blessing for me?

    35:47-35:59

    I have to trust His path, because the path that God leads me on is always ultimately where I need to be, even if it doesn't look like it in the moment.

    36:00-36:11

    So, you know, in a way, we're still kind of with Adam and Eve, out of paradise and suffering.

    36:12-36:23

    But provision was made for our sin, and we have been adopted by God through Jesus Christ.

    36:24-36:26

    And the story doesn't end there.

    36:27-36:35

    Because next Sunday, I'm going to show you even more of God's grace, because there's even more good news.

    We're heading back to paradise.

    36:39-36:40

    Father in heaven, we thank You for Your Word.

    And we thank You, Father, that we see the foundation of faith.

    Even in the garden, we see belief in Your Word, we see receiving Your provision, we see ultimately it's trusting Your path.

    And Father, right now I pray specifically for those who need to do these things, that there are people, somebody here needs to believe, Not just agreeing, but acting on what Your Word says.

    And the first part of that is receiving Your provision.

    37:13-37:27

    There's somebody here right now, Father, that needs to say, "I'm done trying to think that I can earn my way, or be a good enough person, or do enough good works." They need to receive the provision that You've made in Christ.

    37:27-37:36

    And I pray, Father, that you would open their eyes, and open their heart to receive your provision in Christ.

    37:37-37:41

    And right now, Father, there's a whole lot of us on a path that we really don't want to be on.

    37:41-37:44

    But we see in your Word, Father, it's a key part of faith.

    37:45-37:48

    Adam and Eve went through it, and Jesus Christ Himself went through it.

    37:48-37:55

    Help us to trust you, even when it's hard, even when we don't get all the things that we want.

    37:56-38:04

    Father, teach us what it means to wait on you, and teach us what faith looks like when we trust you with the big picture.

    38:06-38:23

    Father, we are about to stand in worship, and I pray that this is a sweet sound to your ear. As you deserve all praise and glory and honor and power, we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

    You know, there's something about Good Friday that we feel something.

    You know what I'm talking about?

    It just feels different than like a Sunday morning service, you know?

    And that's natural, I suppose.

    And I'll never forget the woman, when I was at North Street, we were doing some evangelism in downtown Butler, and I'll never forget the woman we were sharing the gospel with, who told us that the worst thing that ever happened in history was they got Jesus.

    01:32-01:43

    I'm like, "What do you mean?" And she said, "He was the most amazing teacher that there was, and he was doing so much good." And the woman literally started tearing up.

    01:44-01:48

    And she said, "They got him. They killed him." And she starts weeping.

    01:49-01:51

    And she said, "Think of all the good he could have done.

    01:51-01:53

    If only they hadn't killed him!

    01:54-01:55

    They got poor Jesus.

    01:57-02:02

    And we lovingly tried to explain to her God's plan.

    But she was so emotionally distraught, I'm not sure how much she hurt.

    But my point in that is this.

    Even if your theology doesn't match hers, I think sometimes we can come to Good Friday service with the same sentiment.

    That we feel, and again it's natural, when you think Jesus on the cross, we think of this innocent man who was betrayed by one of his best friends.

    And he was arrested, and he was falsely accused, And He was killed in the most horrific manner a human being can be executed.

    We feel the heaviness of that.

    02:53-03:06

    But we can't simply just reduce the cross to sympathy, because it's so much more than that.

    It's so far deeper than that.

    And truth be told, a lot of people have suffered and died over human history, and a lot of people have been executed the same way that Jesus was executed.

    So why did we gather here tonight to lift our voices up for this one?

    Well, if you're visiting with us tonight, if you're watching the stream for the first time, our church is in a series right now called Foundations, and it is a Theology 101 series.

    And on Sunday we talked about how sin entered the world.

    One tree, one law, one temptation, and one transgression.

    We saw Adam and his wife doubt the Word of God, and then believe the lie to deny the Word of God, and ultimately to disobey the Word of God.

    We saw Adam and his wife run from God, hide in shame, and blame everyone else.

    04:17-04:19

    And you know not much has changed.

    04:22-04:33

    Not much has changed in the way that sin manifests itself, and not much has changed in the consequences of sin.

    And you know sin has natural consequences, right?

    04:38-04:40

    There are natural consequences just built into it.

    04:41-04:50

    For example, if you lie, and people catch your lie, and they will, eventually they won't trust you.

    04:51-04:52

    That's a natural consequence.

    04:53-04:57

    Or if you have an anger problem, people aren't going to want to be around you.

    04:58-05:00

    That is a natural consequence.

    05:01-05:08

    If your sin is sexual in nature, you could destroy families.

    05:12-05:13

    It's a natural consequence.

    05:14-05:21

    If your sin is addiction, that leads to a whole lot of natural consequences.

    05:23-05:27

    It can lead to stealing, it can lead to health issues, it can lead ultimately to death.

    05:29-05:36

    So yeah, sin has natural consequences, but there's so much more than just the natural consequences of sin.

    Sin brings a curse.

    05:40-05:43

    And that's what I want to talk about tonight.

    I want to talk about the curse.

    05:46-05:51

    Right now somebody's thinking, "Am I in the right church?

    05:52-06:07

    Because this sounds like it's going to get weird." Well, if you've thought that, it's because you've had this association of curse with voodoo or the occult.

    06:08-06:09

    But do you know what the word "curse" means?

    06:10-06:16

    It literally just means to pronounce a curse on someone.

    06:17-06:18

    That's what it means.

    06:21-06:23

    Some of us curse people all the time.

    06:24-06:30

    when we say things like, "Damn you!" You're pronouncing a curse.

    06:32-06:40

    Or to say that another way, when you say, "Go to hell!" That is a horrible, horrible thing to say to someone.

    06:42-06:45

    When you do, you're pronouncing a curse.

    06:45-06:46

    You're saying, "I wish you harm!

    06:48-06:51

    I wish that God would condemn you!" It's horrible.

    06:54-06:58

    And when you look at God's Word, you know the Bible is full of curses, right?

    06:58-07:02

    There is Balaam, he was a professional cursor, right?

    07:03-07:05

    You have Goliath, who was cursing Israel.

    07:06-07:06

    You even have Peter.

    07:08-07:14

    You remember when Peter was denying that he even knew who Jesus was, and he kept getting pressed on that.

    07:14-07:19

    The Bible says, "He called down curses on himself." Do you understand what that means?

    07:19-07:26

    That while Peter was being pressed, He was saying, "May I be damned if I know Him!" Calling a curse on Himself.

    07:27-07:31

    Well, God Himself invokes curses.

    07:33-07:35

    And this is what I want you to see tonight.

    07:37-07:49

    Because if you don't see this, you're going to walk out one of these doors, and you're going to say, "Oh, poor Jesus, I should feel sad about that." And it is so much deeper than that.

    But here it is, church.

    Curses from God result from disobedience to God.

    I'm going to say that again.

    08:01-08:06

    Curses from God result from disobedience to God.

    And this all started in Eden.

    And we're picking up where we left off.

    Adam and Mrs. Adam, at this point, they sinned.

    They were called out, they confessed, and now they are cursed.

    So if you're taking notes, which we always encourage you to do, on your outline tonight, "Cursed by God, the Consequences of Sin." Alright?

    Write this one down. First of all, letter A, "To the Serpent's Defeat." Look at verse 14.

    It says, "The Lord God said to the serpents, 'Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field.

    08:45-08:52

    On your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life." Stop there.

    08:53-09:00

    God here puts a curse on the animal that Satan used to tempt Eve.

    09:01-09:08

    And we have to ask ourselves, "Well, what did the snake look like before this?" It looked like a dragon.

    09:09-09:19

    You're like, "Well, how do you know that?" Because in Revelation 20, in verse 2, Satan is called a serpent and a dragon.

    09:21-09:23

    And that's really what a dragon is, right?

    09:24-09:26

    It's a snake with arms and legs.

    09:27-09:28

    Not anymore.

    09:30-09:33

    This was part of the curse, even on the animal that Satan used.

    09:33-09:42

    And you're like, "Well, why would God curse the poor animal?" As if there's somebody here saying, "Oh, the poor snake." But why would God curse the animal?

    The reason was to turn it into a symbol.

    09:46-09:59

    You know, God says you'll have no arms, and you'll have no feet, which means the serpent was disarmed and defeated.

    That was a really bad dad joke, I know.

    I thought I'd float it out there and it got the response I was expecting.

    See, I blame just like Adam.

    But here's the point, church.

    10:20-10:22

    Satan's goal was exaltation.

    10:23-10:26

    He wanted to exalt himself above God.

    10:27-10:29

    And God put a symbol on the serpent.

    10:29-10:30

    Nah, he doesn't do that.

    10:30-10:31

    He brought him down.

    10:32-10:36

    That's why he says, "You will eat dust." That's a euphemism.

    10:36-10:37

    That means you will be defeated.

    10:37-10:41

    You see it again in the Bible, Psalm 72, Isaiah 49.

    10:41-10:43

    Like you will be defeated.

    10:44-10:45

    You thought you were going to exalt yourself?

    10:46-10:47

    Not going to happen.

    10:48-10:56

    And just as the rainbow is a reminder that God will never flood the earth again, a snake is a reminder that Satan is defeated.

    10:57-10:58

    Look at verse 15.

    10:59-11:18

    It says, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel." Enmity. Enmity, Satan, between you and the woman, between your offspring and her offspring.

    11:18-11:59

    You're like, "Wait, wait, wait, wait. Satan has offspring? Well, we know that Satan doesn't give birth, but Satan does have children, right? Jesus said that in John 8.44. What between them. You see when Satan tempted Adam and Eve, tempted Eve rather, and Adam was with her, when he tempted her, and he got Adam and Eve to transgress God, Satan thought, "Now they're friends with me, and they're enemies of God." And God here was saying, "I'm going to change that.

    12:01-12:17

    I'm going to flip that around to the extent that some days, he says, "He," talking of one of Eve's future offspring, "He shall bruise your head, you shall bruise his heel." This is the first announcement of the gospel.

    12:19-12:34

    Right after the fall of man, the first thing God says out of the gate is, "There's a Savior coming." Notice it's a specific "He." He, one of this woman's offspring in particular, Satan is going to defeat you.

    12:35-12:38

    And yeah, Satan had a minor victory.

    12:38-12:40

    That's the bruising the heel.

    12:41-12:44

    Satan had a minor victory, and that was the death of Jesus Christ.

    12:45-12:50

    But that was the means by which he was ultimately going to be crushed.

    12:51-13:00

    In other words, you're going to bite his heel, But your head's going to be close enough to his foot that he's going to stomp you out.

    13:01-13:06

    So to the serpent God says, "Defeat. That's your curse. You are defeated.

    13:07-13:12

    Let her be to the woman, pain at home." Pain at home.

    13:13-13:19

    Verse 16, it says, "To the woman," again this is the Lord speaking, He's talking about the consequences of sin.

    13:20-13:27

    It says, "To the woman, He said, 'I will surely multiply your pain and childbearing.'" In pain, you shall bring forth children.

    13:28-13:42

    Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." You see, women are cursed to suffer in the two most important relationships that they have with their children and with their husband.

    13:43-13:48

    First of all, the Lord says, "I will multiply pain and childbearing." Is there anybody that can give testimony to that?

    13:50-13:50

    Is that true?

    13:51-13:52

    I mean, I've heard.

    13:54-13:56

    I don't think I have to sell anybody on that.

    13:57-14:05

    But he says, "Your desire shall be for your husband." And that's an interesting phrase, because you can look at that and think, "Well, that's good, right?

    14:05-14:11

    Because shouldn't a woman desire her husband?" This isn't a positive thing here.

    14:11-14:12

    This is actually negative.

    14:13-14:15

    The word means literally this.

    14:15-14:18

    It means to seek control.

    14:19-14:23

    This exact wording is used one other place in the Old Testament.

    14:24-14:27

    It's in the very next chapter, in Genesis 4, verse 7.

    14:29-14:37

    The Lord says to Cain, "If you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door." Look at this.

    14:37-14:50

    "Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it." It means, literally, desire to have control over.

    14:51-14:55

    The Lord's telling Eve that there's going to be an authority struggle in the home.

    14:56-15:07

    This next phrase, it says, "He shall rule over you." You can't miss this because "He shall rule" in the Hebrew, that's not a nice term.

    15:10-15:15

    He's going to be a wonderful protector head of the home.

    15:15-15:18

    That "He shall rule" is a very harsh term.

    15:18-15:19

    That's a dictator term.

    15:21-15:22

    What does that mean?

    15:23-15:24

    It means this.

    15:25-15:42

    To the woman, the Lord said, "You're going to have desire to have control over Him, but He's going to misuse His authority over you." There's going to be pain and conflict in what was a harmonious relationship.

    15:43-15:46

    And I won't ask anybody to shout out if they can give testimony to that.

    15:47-15:51

    But that is a reality to some degree in every marriage.

    15:52-15:54

    You see, the woman took the lead in the fall.

    15:55-15:57

    She acted independently from Adam during the temptation.

    15:58-16:03

    And that rebellion against God's ordained roles is going to be permanent.

    16:05-16:06

    That's why you see it in homes.

    16:07-16:13

    That's why you see a husband and wife not on board with finances, which I hear is the number one cause of divorce.

    16:14-16:18

    That's why when it comes to family direction, husband and wife not on board.

    16:20-16:24

    That's why when it comes to worship, husband and wife oftentimes not on board.

    16:25-16:26

    It's part of the curse.

    16:28-16:33

    This is what the natural, sinful direction is going to be because of sin.

    16:35-16:38

    and let her see to the man pain at work." Pain at work.

    16:38-16:39

    Look at verse 17.

    16:40-16:50

    It says, "And to Adam he said, 'Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, you shall not eat of it.

    16:51-16:52

    Cursed is the ground because of you.

    16:53-17:05

    In pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life.'" See the Lord was saying to Adam, "Hey, you chose to do what she wanted instead of what I want it.

    17:06-17:12

    Adam, you were more concerned about her than you were about me." He says, "So cursed is the ground.

    17:13-17:24

    And just as the curse hits woman where she lives, curse hits man where he lives, and that's the workplace." Now, kids, work was pre-fall.

    17:24-17:27

    We just had a whole sermon about that recently at our church.

    Work was pre-fall.

    17:28-17:30

    Work was not part of the curse.

    The curse is the Lord saying, work is going to be hard. Hard work is going to consume your life. And I gotta tell you in this culture this is kind of a hard sell because honestly we have it way too good here. But I would encourage you to go visit some of our friends in Thailand. Go visit some of our friends in Nepal where it's a daily really struggle to make sure that we are planting, and we are cultivating, and we are harvesting, and we are breaking our backs to put food on the table for our family.

    18:11-18:13

    It's a lot harder there.

    18:14-18:15

    Look at verse 18.

    18:16-18:24

    The Lord continues, "Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.

    18:26-18:41

    By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread "Return to the ground, for out of it you were taken, for you are dust, and to dust you shall return." Judgment on creation itself, thorns, thistles, sweat.

    18:41-18:49

    You're going to be working hard at them, and the very ground is going to be fighting back against you.

    18:50-18:52

    The ground itself is cursed. Have you noticed that?

    18:54-19:00

    Have you noticed that the ground produces all by itself, but never food?

    19:01-19:01

    Right?

    19:03-19:04

    Like, what do you mean by that? Here's what I mean.

    19:04-19:06

    Go clear a lot somewhere.

    19:07-19:09

    Just get a plot of land and clear it.

    19:10-19:12

    Don't touch it. And come back in a year.

    19:13-19:15

    Are you going to find an apple orchard there?

    19:16-19:18

    Are you going to find green beans growing?

    19:18-19:19

    No. What are you going to find? Tell me.

    19:20-19:23

    Weeds, right? Lots of weeds.

    19:24-19:25

    That's the curse.

    19:26-19:46

    God says, "Adam..." Just paraphrasing verse 19, He says, "You came from dirt, and you're going to work really hard in the dirt, and eventually you're going to be dirt again." So, "Adam, the Lord saying, 'You and your wife chose to ignore Me.

    19:47-19:58

    You chose to disobey me, so now life is short and difficult." There was one law in the garden. You know that?

    19:59-20:04

    One thing. One prohibition. Just one.

    20:06-20:09

    And man failed. And we're cursed.

    20:11-20:15

    And all these things that we see here, you can see it today, can't you?

    Man failed. Man's cursed.

    20:22-20:25

    Well, you can fast forward in your Bible to the days of Moses.

    20:26-20:31

    And there, God gave the Old Testament law, also called the Mosaic law.

    It's laid out in your Bibles in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy.

    And it turned into a lot more than one law, than one rule.

    We're not going to turn there now, but Deuteronomy 27 and 28, check it out sometime.

    Pretty detailed list.

    Disobey, cursed. Disobey, cursed. Disobey, cursed.

    Don't do this or you're cursed. Don't do this or you're cursed.

    God results in curse from God.

    So you're like, what does this have to do with Good Friday?

    You know, I came in here tonight thinking I was going to hear something about Good Friday, and we've been in Genesis.

    What does all of this talk of curse have to do with Good Friday?

    Galatians chapter 3, look at this very closely.

    21:42-21:49

    Paul writes, "For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse.

    21:50-22:02

    For it is written, 'Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law and do them.'" Do you see what he's saying?

    22:02-22:13

    He's saying if it is your goal to be righteous by obeying God's Word, you're going to end up under a curse.

    22:14-22:14

    Why?

    22:15-22:16

    Because you have to do it all.

    22:17-22:19

    And you have to do it all perfectly.

    22:20-22:37

    That's why he says, "Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for the righteous shall live by faith." He says, "But the law is not of faith, rather the one who does them shall live by them." Same point.

    22:38-22:50

    He's saying if you think you're going to obey God, and that's going to be the means of your salvation and your righteousness, you're going to end up under a curse, because none of us can do it.

    22:52-22:56

    So you're saying that we're all under a curse, is that what you're saying?

    22:57-22:57

    Yeah.

    22:59-23:53

    Not only did we inherit the sin nature of Adam, but we've chosen at some point in our lives to disobey the Word of God. And according to the Word of God, that puts us under a curse. Here it is. Look at this. It says, "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us. For it is written, "Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree." Under the Old Testament law, when a lawbreaker, when a criminal was executed, usually by stoning, they would take his body and they would hang it on a tree for everyone to see as an example.

    23:55-24:00

    Say, "Look, this is what happens when you disregard the Word of God.

    24:00-24:06

    Everybody take a good look." And that criminal wasn't cursed by being hanged on a tree.

    24:07-24:11

    He was hanged on the tree because he was cursed.

    24:12-24:15

    And this is Paul's point here in Galatians.

    24:17-24:22

    And if you try to be righteous by keeping the law, you end up cursed because you can't keep it.

    24:24-24:25

    Have you ever broken a commandment?

    24:26-24:27

    Have you ever stolen anything?

    24:29-24:30

    Have you ever committed adultery?

    24:31-24:34

    Which by the way, Jesus said lusting is the same as committing adultery.

    24:35-24:37

    Have you ever murdered someone?

    24:38-24:42

    By the way, Jesus said hating someone was the same as murder.

    24:44-24:45

    Have you ever disobeyed your parents?

    24:47-24:48

    Have you ever told a lie?

    24:49-24:54

    We're all cursed by nature and we can't work our way out of it.

    24:56-25:12

    But on the cross, Jesus in taking our sin on himself became a curse for us.

    25:13-25:32

    Do you understand now why we can't just look at Jesus on the cross and say, "Oh, they got Him, the poor man." Do you understand now why this is so much deeper than Jesus being just some martyr for some cause.

    25:32-25:45

    This is God in the flesh, perfectly innocent, laying down His life so that He could become A curse for us.

    25:46-25:48

    You know the ultimate curse is hell, isn't it?

    25:49-25:53

    The ultimate curse is being separated from God.

    25:53-25:54

    That's what hell is.

    25:55-25:57

    Being eternally separated from Him.

    25:58-26:10

    And do you know, while Jesus was on the cross, He experienced the full pain of hell.

    26:11-26:13

    which is why he cried out, right Dan?

    26:13-26:28

    "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" He said that not only to fulfill the Scripture, but because he was literally experiencing the pain of hell, the pain of separation from God.

    26:29-26:48

    That's why Jesus is different than every other person who's ever been executed, every other person that's ever been crucified, because the infinite suffering that should come on us, God's wrath against our rebellion, you see Jesus stepped in and He said, "Let that be on Me.

    26:50-27:11

    I will take that so that whoever believes in Me will never have to." And when you see Jesus on the cross, and you realize that He took the curse that's on Me, He took that on Himself, What we should be thinking maybe is, "That should have been me.

    27:12-27:13

    I should have paid.

    27:16-27:23

    I deserve to experience God's wrath for my sin, but Jesus took my place.

    27:24-27:25

    Jesus took my curse.

    27:27-27:30

    So now because of Him, I'm no longer cursed.

    27:32-27:33

    Has He taken yours?"
