Open up your Bibles to Ecclesiastes chapter 10.

    00:53-01:06

If you're visiting with us today, we've been going through the book of Ecclesiastes and it's a Holy Spirit inspired rant from King Solomon about life.

    01:06-01:13

And he's told us, life just often seems empty, doesn't it?

    01:16-01:19

And then spoiler alert, he's told us that eventually He's going to die.

    01:22-01:29

And through his discovery of the meaning of life, he's told us that so much cannot be figured out.

    01:32-01:34

Life has to be taken from the hand of God.

    01:35-01:37

    Because God gives enjoyment.

    01:38-01:39

    God gives contentment.

    01:40-02:47

So, everything that we have covered so far in Ecclesiastes really just the introduction. Because this passage here is the sermon. Because the question is, well then how should we live if all this is true, we can't figure out life and someday we're gonna die and there's so much that is just frustrating and irritating about life. How should I live day to day? That's what he tells us here. So, At the risk of starting a riot to borrow terminology from Joel Osteen on the top of your outline, we're just saying your best life for now. I don't believe this is your best life now. If you're a follower of Jesus Christ, your best life is ahead. But I think if we had Solomon here, we said Solomon in light of everything you said, how can we live our best life for now on the earth? This is what he would tell us. All right, number one, write this down, be a good citizen Be a good citizen without an attitude.

    02:47-02:48

Look at verses 16 and 17.

    02:49-02:54

He says, "Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child and your princes feast in the morning.

    02:54-03:23

Happy are you, O land, when your king is the son of the nobility and your princes feast at the proper time for strength and not for drunkenness." And he tells us again, "Not all government is good." He says, "Woe to you, Olan, when your king is a child." He's not necessarily talking about age as much as he's talking about maturity.

    03:25-03:32

Because some governments are led by weak, incompetent, untrustworthy, self-serving people.

    03:34-03:38

And their lack of wisdom should not surprise us, is what Solomon's saying.

    03:38-03:56

He says, "Some leaders just neglect their duties." So verse 18, he says, "Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks." So, why does the house leak?

    03:58-03:58

    It's laziness.

    03:59-04:03

And obviously Solomon here is comparing a nation to a house.

    04:05-04:05

    Right?

    04:07-04:08

And that's the funny thing about laziness.

    04:10-04:13

It doesn't bring the lightning bolt of God's judgment.

    04:15-04:18

Laziness just leads to a very subtle decay.

    04:19-04:27

A very slow crumbling in your house and in a country.

    04:29-04:30

    Look at verse 19.

    04:31-04:59

He says, "Bread is made for laughter and wine gladdens life and money answers everything." And I did a lot of reading this week, like what's he saying here? And you know, read about 20 different books and got about 25 different opinions on this. But this is obviously, I think, to be taken facetiously. Right? This is the motto of the lazy, irresponsible person.

    05:01-05:05

He says bread is made for laughter. Really? Is that why bread exists?

    05:06-05:07

    Of course not, right?

    05:09-05:14

Wine gladdens life, really? Is alcohol the answer to make you have a happy life?

    05:15-05:19

I know a lot of people would say otherwise. Money answers everything, come on.

    05:21-05:21

    Come on.

    05:23-05:26

This is what lazy, irresponsible people say.

    05:27-05:31

Life is not just nothing but food and wine and money.

    05:33-05:35

So Solomon reminds us that not all governments are good.

    05:35-05:48

And right now, there's somebody right here, there's somebody watching this stream, that are like, "Man, Pastor Jeff, you're not gonna sell me on this." Please let me tell you something, man.

    05:48-05:57

The government is full of the most vile, disgusting, abominable human pieces of trash to ever...

    05:59-06:00

    Hold on there.

    06:01-06:03

    Keep reading what he says.

    06:05-06:09

Solomon wasn't bringing this up just to start an argument.

    06:10-06:11

Look at what he says, verse 20.

    06:13-06:26

"Even in your thoughts, do not curse the king, nor in your bedroom, curse the rich, for a bird of the air will carry your voice, or some winged creature tell the matter." Have you ever heard that expression?

    06:26-06:28

A little birdie told me, have you ever heard that?

    06:28-06:29

    That's where that comes from.

    06:30-06:31

A little birdie told me something.

    06:34-06:39

Solomon's not saying that the king might hear you say something bad about him and punish you.

    06:41-07:06

What he's saying is, "Listen, somebody needs to hear this today." He's saying, "Complaining about leadership in the country does nothing but spread negativity and toxicity." It's not healthy and it's not productive.

    07:08-07:15

So if you're a person who is constantly complaining about the government, look, we're not making a political statement here, all right?

    07:18-07:25

But if you're a person that's constantly complaining about the government, Solomon says you really need to hit the brakes on that.

    07:27-07:34

Do you notice he says, even in your thoughts, even in your thoughts.

    07:37-07:47

What Solomon is saying here is, it doesn't do any good to spread negativity when you're constantly complaining about the leadership, whatever your political persuasion is.

    07:49-07:50

    It's just toxic.

    07:52-07:58

What I mean is, I'm old enough to remember back when it was fun to scroll through social media.

    07:59-08:06

There was a day I enjoyed going through Facebook because, oh, look, oh, look, you know, these friends of mine that live in Ohio, they just got a new puppy.

    08:06-08:07

Look how cute their puppy is.

    08:08-08:11

Oh, these friends of mine that are missionaries, oh, look over there, they're on vacation.

    08:11-08:12

    Look how nice.

    08:12-08:15

They used to be fun to see what people were doing.

    08:15-08:21

And now you scroll through and it's like the current president this and the former president that.

    08:21-08:28

And it's just like, I got to a point a few years ago where I was just like, what am I doing?

    08:28-08:34

Like I'm stirred up and annoyed and frustrated every time I get on here.

    08:34-08:35

Why am I getting on here?

    08:37-08:39

That's exactly what Solomon's talking about here.

    08:42-08:48

That's why he says, even in your thoughts, even in your thoughts, don't be consumed by what's happening in government.

    08:49-08:51

Government is God's idea, so be a good citizen.

    08:51-08:52

Well, what if the government's corrupt?

    08:53-08:57

Then I would say, you need to check out three sermons ago because we covered this.

    08:58-09:03

But I would just say today, listen, respect the position even if you can't respect the person.

    09:06-09:15

Solomon says, "The wise are prudent in what they say, even in private, even in their heads." Be a good citizen without an attitude.

    09:16-09:17

    Alright?

    09:17-09:23

Number two, how should we live in light of everything he said?

    09:23-09:32

He says you've got to be a good citizen without an attitude, but number two, give generously without hesitation. Give generously without hesitation.

    09:34-09:41

You know, when I was a teenager, my brother was in this band and they get their picture taken.

    09:41-09:42

    They were in the newspaper.

    09:43-09:44

Do you guys all know what a newspaper is?

    09:46-09:51

Okay. Everybody that was on the stage here, let me explain what a newspaper is.

    09:52-09:58

Was this, you know, big sheet with print and it would tell you, you didn't have to log in or anything.

    09:58-10:01

It was just like paper and it would tell you what was happening.

    10:01-10:25

But anyways, my brother's band was in the newspaper and a friend of ours said, "Hey, I'll get you a couple copies of that paper." So I remember he came to our house and my mom answered the door and he goes, "Hey, I got a couple copies of that paper that your son's band is in." And my mom goes, "Oh, thank you very much." and she took the newspapers and he stood there for a minute.

    10:27-10:31

She goes, "Hey, I really appreciate you bringing those." You're welcome.

    10:33-10:34

    Stood there for a minute.

    10:36-10:46

And then finally he said, "Yeah, those were 25 cents each." My point is, and Solomon's point here is don't be that guy.

    10:47-10:48

    Don't be that guy.

    10:49-10:53

Your life should be characterized by generosity.

    10:54-10:57

One of the most disbelieved verses in the entire Bible, do you know what it is?

    10:58-11:02

It's when Jesus said, "It's more blessed to give "than to receive," as recorded in Acts 20.

    11:05-11:11

Your life, if you're a born again believer in Christ, your life should be characterized by generosity.

    11:13-11:18

And Saul tells us why, because maybe there's somebody here that's not sold on that.

    11:19-11:23

Well, Solomon tells us why and he gives a group of Proverbs to explain.

    11:23-11:25

So on your outline, three reasons to give generously.

    11:26-11:27

Now I'm gonna go through these very quickly.

    11:27-11:33

Understand this could be and was a whole sermon series, but he just gives us three reasons to give generously.

    11:33-11:39

Number A, letter one, letter A, God gives back to the generous.

    11:40-11:42

God gives back to the generous.

    11:43-11:44

Look at chapter 11, verse one.

    11:44-11:54

He says, "Cast your bread upon the waters, "For you will find it after many days." Casting your bread on the water, that was a Hebrew expression for being wasteful.

    11:55-11:57

That's just like throwing your bread on the water.

    11:57-11:58

What happens if you throw your bread on the water?

    11:58-12:01

It's going to dissolve, the fish are going to eat it, it's done.

    12:01-12:02

    It's being wasteful.

    12:02-12:07

Now Solomon here is not saying to be wasteful or be reckless.

    12:07-12:13

It's a picture of giving By taking a chance.

    12:16-12:17

    Like, what do you mean?

    12:18-12:19

    You know what I mean.

    12:20-12:30

Have you ever thought about giving to someone and you thought, I don't know if their need is real or not, they might just waste it.

    12:30-12:31

Have you ever had that thought?

    12:32-12:34

I'd like to give to help this person, but they just might waste it.

    12:35-12:39

And what Solomon's saying here is, err on the side of generosity.

    12:41-12:42

Cast your bread on the waters.

    12:43-12:45

Take a chance to meet a real need.

    12:47-12:50

Jesus expects us to give to the needy, Matthew 6.2.

    12:51-12:53

So I would say be wise about it.

    12:55-12:56

Yes, be wise about it, absolutely.

    12:58-12:59

    But do it.

    13:01-13:03

    Give freely and give generously.

    13:03-13:04

Like why should I do that?

    13:07-13:17

it's going to come back to you. God will make sure that when you give, you will get back.

    13:18-14:11

More on that in a second. Look at verse 2. He says, "Give a portion to seven or even to eight, for you know not what disaster may happen on earth. Give widely, give to as many people as you can. Don't limit yourself. And his point here is, you know, you might go through hard times and one of these people that you helped might pay you back. It's coming back. It's coming back proportionately to how you give. And amazingly, the Bible says the more that you give, the more God gives back to you. Right? 2 Corinthians 9.6. Again, context is money. Paul says the point is this, "Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully." It's a law of agriculture, right?

    14:11-14:57

If you plant one or two seed, you're going to have one or two plants. But if you go with a bucket of seed and just plant, you're going to have plants everywhere, right? The more you plant, the more it's going to grow. And Paul says spiritually, that's a law that also applies to giving. The more you give, the more God's going to give back to you. I'm going to explain how in a second, because Solomon gets into that. Solomon tells us exactly how that happens. Have you ever wondered? He's going to tell us. But first, letter B, three reasons to give generously. God gives back to the generous. Letter B, giving demonstrates your faith. Giving demonstrates your faith. Look at verse 3. He says, "If the clouds are are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth.

    14:57-15:04

And if a tree falls to the south or to the north and the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.

    15:06-15:07

Okay, first of all, the clouds, right?

    15:08-15:13

A cloud full of rain empties itself on the earth.

    15:16-15:17

    Obvious picture there, right?

    15:18-15:22

The giving as a natural outflow of a full life.

    15:23-15:30

A life that receives blessing from God and acknowledges that, can't help but shower that blessing upon others.

    15:31-15:35

Like, okay, yeah, yeah, Jeff, I got the cloud thing, but what's with the tree?

    15:37-15:40

Solomon says, wherever it falls, there it is.

    15:42-15:44

Like, what's the point of that?

    15:45-15:59

The point of that is this, wherever God placed you, geographically, in this period of history, wherever God has placed you, that's where He wants you.

    16:00-16:04

Another way of saying this is bloom where you're planted.

    16:06-16:07

    Bloom where you're planted.

    16:08-16:10

Well, what's the point of that?

    16:11-16:17

You need to meet the needs around you that you're aware of.

    16:19-16:19

    Here's the thing.

    16:20-16:24

You can't meet the needs of everyone everywhere, can you?

    16:25-16:28

You're not even aware of the needs of everyone everywhere.

    16:29-16:36

And even if you were, you do not have the resources or the capacity to give to all the needs everywhere.

    16:36-16:45

Think about whether it's these poor missionaries in Asia, these children in Africa, we got these friends that...

    16:46-16:48

He's like, "Just look in your circle.

    16:49-16:50

Where do you see a need?

    16:52-16:54

Because that's why God has you where He does.

    16:55-16:58

To meet the needs that you're aware of around you.

    17:00-17:00

    Right?

    17:01-17:10

Verse 4, He says, "He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap." "Don't wait for the perfect time to give," is what He's saying.

    17:13-17:18

For some people they say, "You know what? Look, Pastor Jeff, I'm sold on generosity.

    17:18-17:21

I think giving is so important, but my income is limited.

    17:24-17:27

I'll tell you what, Pastor Jeff, when I get more, I'll give more.

    17:29-17:30

    No, you won't.

    17:31-17:32

    You won't.

    17:33-17:40

And I think when you say that, you feel like you really want to, but the truth is, getting more doesn't mean you're going to give.

    17:42-17:45

If you can't give a dime out of a dollar, you're not going to give $10 out of $100.

    17:48-17:52

not gonna do it. And that's what he's saying here.

    17:54-18:13

Don't wait for the perfect time to give because you never will. It's like saying you know I've heard young couples say this, it's appropriate during infant dedication, child dedication here, but I've heard young couples say well we'll have kids when we can afford them.

    18:16-18:37

"Oh, so you're not planning on having children?" "You're never going to be able to afford kids." "Have you been around a kid?" "They're just constantly like, eating!" "I'll have kids when I can afford them." "Alright." That's what he's talking about here.

    18:39-18:39

    But here's his point.

    18:42-18:48

Church, there is no more concrete evidence of where your faith is and how you spend your money.

    18:50-18:53

If you're looking for a concrete evidence, am I really a believer?

    18:54-18:58

Do I really believe in Jesus and his promises and heaven?

    18:58-19:00

Do I really believe all that?

    19:00-19:03

There's no bigger evidence than what you do with money.

    19:04-19:13

Jesus said in Matthew 6.21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." And we so badly want to make that vice versa.

    19:13-19:15

where my heart is, that's where my treasure is.

    19:15-19:20

Oh, my heart's with missions, and my heart's with the poor, and my heart's with...

    19:23-19:26

In other words, show me your checkbook and I'll show you where your heart is.

    19:26-19:27

    That's what Jesus was saying.

    19:28-19:35

Show me where you spend your money, and from that list, from your ledger, I'll be able to tell you exactly where your heart is.

    19:37-19:42

Giving demonstrates your faith, or lack of faith.

    19:44-19:55

Three reasons to give generously, God gives back, to the generous giving demonstrates your faith, and last and probably most awesome of these, giving lets you see God at work.

    19:57-20:10

Because you might be like, "Okay, you said earlier, giving's an act of faith, and you're saying that when I give, God gives back, but my question is, how exactly does God give back?

    20:10-20:15

Okay, so I give to a missionary, I know somebody in need, and I give unto the Lord.

    20:15-20:17

Does he like rain it from heaven?

    20:18-20:24

Do I have a tree suddenly grows up in my backyard that has nothing but like $5 bills on it?

    20:24-20:26

How exactly does God give back?

    20:29-20:30

    Your answer's in verse 5.

    20:32-20:46

He says, "As you do not know the way the Spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything." There's your answer.

    20:47-20:48

    How does God give back?

    20:50-20:50

    I don't know.

    20:53-21:01

You don't know either, by the way, before you start throwing insults at me for not knowing.

    21:01-21:01

    You don't know.

    21:02-21:03

    You don't know.

    21:04-21:05

    How does God give back?

    21:05-21:06

    I don't know.

    21:08-21:18

Solomon says, "You don't even know, you don't even know how a spirit enters a person's body while they're developing in the mother's womb.

    21:18-21:30

You don't even know how that happens." And we just saw with our dedication up here, that's something that happens right in front of our face every single day, all over the world, and it has for thousands of years, like people being born, people being born.

    21:30-21:31

We see that all the time, don't we?

    21:31-21:32

    People being born.

    21:33-21:49

He says, "You have no idea what happens there, that somehow, upon conception, okay, this human tissue is being formed in the womb, but a spirit goes into that tissue, and you have no idea how that happens.

    21:49-21:50

I don't know how that happens.

    21:51-22:31

I can barely wrap my brain around the biological functions that accompany, you know, the developing, you know, fetus in the womb, let alone," he says, "there's something supernatural that happens and you can't explain that. Oh, by the way, I think we should point out here that he is very clearly saying in God's Word that a fetus is a person with a spirit. You know, for the people that claim they're people of faith or claim they're Christians and say abortion is okay, Solomon says that fetus has a human spirit.

    22:34-22:39

But his main point here regarding money is like, "Look, we don't understand how God works, but He does.

    22:41-22:47

He just does. I give and God gives back to me.

    22:47-22:53

I can't explain it, but He does." And all I can tell you is I've seen it in my own life.

    22:53-23:02

If there was a time in our family, things were tight, but Aaron and I have always committed to giving God first and best.

    23:02-23:07

Every paycheck, anything that comes in, God gets the first portion and he gets the best portion.

    23:07-23:16

And she can tell you, there was a season in our lives where we were like three or $400 in the hole every month when we did our budget, but somehow we never were.

    23:17-23:19

    And I can't explain that.

    23:21-23:23

And my wife works in finance.

    23:23-23:24

    We couldn't explain it.

    23:25-23:31

How is it that according to the paper, we're in the hole, but we never are?

    23:34-23:36

It's because God's at work and we can't explain it.

    23:37-23:41

And I don't even have time to tell you today of all the testimonies I've heard from people.

    23:42-23:50

And Pastor Jeff, my finances were a wreck and I couldn't make ends meet and nothing was working out, but finally I said, you know what, God?

    23:50-23:57

I'm just gonna give you, I'll give to you first, and whatever happens, if I end up living in a cardboard box, I guess that's what's gonna happen.

    23:58-23:59

But I'm giving to God first.

    24:00-24:06

I've heard so many people say, Pastor Jim, as soon as I started doing that, my finances went 180.

    24:07-24:08

    And I can't explain it.

    24:08-24:13

I can't understand how my income hasn't changed.

    24:13-24:18

The only thing that changed was I give to God first, and now everything's different about my finances.

    24:20-24:23

And if you don't believe it, try it.

    24:24-24:25

    Give it a try.

    24:26-24:27

    Look at verse 6.

    24:29-24:44

He says, "In the morning sow your seed, in the evening withhold not your hand, for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good." God uses our gift.

    24:44-24:45

We don't know how, we don't know when.

    24:47-24:51

He says, "So err on the side of generosity." Err on the side of generosity.

    24:53-24:54

    Parents, teach your kids.

    24:55-24:57

Look, they can give a dollar.

    25:00-25:03

If you're older than kid age, you can probably give more.

    25:04-25:07

The Bible says, "Give what you can." Give what you can.

    25:10-25:15

We learned back when we studied Jesus feeding the 5,000 men plus women and children with a little boy's lunch.

    25:15-25:20

One of the big lessons we learn from that is a little bit in God's hands is a lot.

    25:22-25:30

So if you wanna give unto the Lord and say, well God, this isn't very much, I don't know what the church is gonna do with this, just give it to God.

    25:32-25:34

He has a way of multiplying things.

    25:36-25:37

So you wanna see God at work in your life?

    25:38-25:39

    I'm assuming that's why you're here.

    25:41-25:43

You wanna see God at work in your life?

    25:44-25:45

    Here's how, try this.

    25:45-25:47

    Give, give a lot.

    25:47-25:56

Give to the church, give to missions, give to those around you in need, and then sit back and watch how God gives back to you so that you have more to give out.

    25:56-25:57

    He'll do it.

    25:58-26:00

    Give generously without hesitation.

    26:01-26:05

And then finally for today, enjoy life without regret.

    26:08-26:10

    Enjoy life without regret.

    26:11-27:03

Look at verse seven, he says, "Light is sweet and it is pleasant for the eyes the sun. So, if a person lives many years, let him rejoice in them all, but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity. Light is sweet, it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun, the whole imagery of light and sun, it's living in the light of God's love, right? That's an image throughout Scripture. It's living in the love of God. It's described as light. Why? Because the Bible says by nature we are selfish sinners. And Jesus said that men love darkness because their deeds are evil.

    27:06-27:10

By nature we want to hide our sin.

    27:10-27:11

We want to stay in the dark.

    27:11-27:15

We want to live life on our terms, not on God's terms.

    27:15-27:16

So we want to keep it in the dark.

    27:19-27:22

And coming to Jesus Christ means stepping out into the light.

    27:23-27:24

    Say, "I'm done hiding.

    27:25-27:28

I'm done living for my sin.

    27:28-27:29

    I'm turning from that.

    27:30-27:33

and I'm receiving the gift of salvation that God has given through Jesus Christ.

    27:35-27:37

Jesus Christ died on the cross to take your sin away.

    27:38-27:40

He rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    27:40-27:43

And He has called you to turn from your sin and receive Him.

    27:43-27:49

And if you have not done that, it's because of one of two reasons.

    27:49-27:53

One reason is you don't know the Gospel, which I just explained it, so that reason's off the table.

    27:53-27:57

But if you have not done that, it means you love your sin more than you love Jesus.

    27:59-28:00

rather stay in the dark than come to the light.

    28:01-28:04

And I would challenge you to reconsider that option.

    28:07-28:09

Solomon says, you want to enjoy life?

    28:11-28:13

You want to find the meaning of life, you have to enjoy life without regret.

    28:13-28:15

That's living in the light of God's love.

    28:16-28:18

God's love makes life worth living.

    28:18-28:24

And we've seen throughout Ecclesiastes, it's not money, it's not stuff, it's not projects, it's not trying to figure everything out.

    28:24-28:27

It's not being frustrated with the government as we've seen a few times here.

    28:28-28:31

It's enjoying every season of your life from the hand of God.

    28:31-28:32

    Look at verse nine.

    28:32-28:39

He says, "Rejoice, O young man, in your youth and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth.

    28:39-28:50

Walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes, but know that for all these things, God will bring you into judgment." So I wanna talk to the young people here.

    28:52-28:58

You're like, "Well, who's that?" Well, if you consider yourself a young person, and I'm talking to you, all right?

    28:59-29:00

Talking to the young people here.

    29:01-29:15

Solomon is saying, "Your youth is a gift, use it, enjoy it." This is a season of life, young people.

    29:15-29:19

This is a season of life where you have opportunities that you'll never have again.

    29:20-29:26

Not only that, but you have the strength to go after these opportunities, And you're not always gonna have that strength.

    29:27-29:29

So young people, take advantage of that.

    29:31-29:32

    Try new things.

    29:34-29:35

    Travel, meet new people.

    29:38-29:44

But, he says, you need to know that for all these things, God will bring you into judgment.

    29:44-29:48

That word for know is more than just intellectual perception.

    29:48-29:52

He's saying, this is a truth that should shape your life.

    29:52-29:54

That someday there's going to be an accounting.

    29:56-29:59

So young people, your opportunity is not always going to be there.

    30:01-30:10

Solomon says, "Go after it hard, but go after it hard in a way that honors God." In a way that honors God.

    30:10-30:11

Now, can you be more specific, Solomon?

    30:12-30:13

Sure, look at the next verse.

    30:13-31:50

Verse 10, he says, "Remove vexation from your heart and put away pain from your body, for youth and the dawn of life are vanity." Vexation. Vexation is anger, resentment. What he's saying is, "Hey, teenagers, get the chip off your shoulder. You're not cool, you're not tough, you're not impressing anybody, you're not scaring anybody. Remove vexation from your heart." He says, "And put away pain. Stop harmful practices, drugs, alcohol, vaping, whatever is involved in your life that is abusing your body." He says, "Young people, you got put that stuff away because youth is vanity. Solomon says, "Listen, young people, enjoy your youth. Take advantage of this time where you have strength and opportunity, but keep in mind you want to honor God no matter what you do. Enjoy your youth because it's not going to last forever. You're going to get old." Has anybody noticed? Solomon addresses that last chunk here and if you've made it this far you've unlocked an achievement award you get a star cookie yogi button something look at verse or chapter 12 Solomon talks about getting old he says remember also your creator in the days of your youth before the evil days come in the years drawn near of which you will say I have no pleasure in them before the Sun and the light The moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain.

    31:52-32:00

And the day the keepers of the house tremble and the strong men are bent and the grinders cease because they are few and those who look through the windows are dimmed.

    32:01-32:15

When the doors in the street are shut and the sound of the grinding is low, when one rises up at the sound of a bird and all the daughters of song are brought low, they are afraid also of what is high and terrors are in the way.

    32:16-32:34

The almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along, and desire fails because man is going to his eternal home as the mourners go about the streets. For the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is shattered at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, and the dust returns to the earth as it was.

    32:35-32:37

The Spirit returns to God who gave it.

    32:38-32:42

"Vanity of vanity," says the preacher. Everything is vanity.

    32:44-32:45

It's a picture of getting old.

    32:48-32:50

I could go through and explain what every one of these images means.

    32:51-32:52

I think you get the point though.

    32:54-32:56

The point really is in verse 1.

    32:56-33:02

He says, "Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth." Remember doesn't mean to think about God occasionally.

    33:03-33:34

What Solomon is saying is, "Listen, don't get so caught up in pursuing worldly things that you neglect to put God first. Young people, you have to seek God now. Young people, listen, you have to serve God now. Why? Because the older you get, the more difficult it gets.

    33:37-34:14

only because you have the strength and the energy now, but there's another reason. That's this. Older people often get bitter and jaded. A lot of older people refuse to change and they refuse to accept change. And if you're waiting Until you get older, just get serious about God, the day is going to come that you don't even care to.

    34:16-34:18

Someday it's going to be too late.

    34:19-34:21

Solomon says now is the time to seek God.

    34:23-34:25

Now is the time to open your heart to God.

    34:25-34:27

Now is the time to know God's Word.

    34:27-34:34

Now is the time to learn to enjoy life from His hand and be content wherever He has you.

    34:35-34:39

He says, "Enjoy life without regret." I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please.

    34:42-34:43

    Bow with me, please.

    34:44-34:51

You know, we've covered so many different things in Ecclesiastes and we still have one more to go.

    34:52-35:03

And sometimes it's hard to look at the whole giant chunk and say, "What am I supposed to do with this?" And Solomon tells us exactly what we're supposed to do with this.

    35:06-35:17

So if you want to enjoy life from the hand of God, if you want to live your life in a way that not only honors God, but maximizes your happiness, he says just these three things will do it.

    35:19-35:21

These three things will do it.

    35:23-35:25

You're going to be a good citizen without an attitude.

    35:27-35:33

Father, by nature we are so content to just complain about what's happening.

    35:35-35:39

God, I pray that we would repent of that complaining.

    35:41-35:43

Father, you tell us to be generous.

    35:46-35:50

It's so easy to come up with excuses to not give.

    35:51-35:53

    It might get wasted.

    35:53-35:55

We don't know how he's gonna spend that money.

    35:56-35:58

Somebody with more money can meet the need.

    35:58-36:02

And we just make up so many excuses, but your word doesn't give us an out.

    36:04-36:07

When we've received blessing from you, we're to use that to bless others.

    36:10-36:12

Father, help us to enjoy life without regret.

    36:15-36:17

Father, we take advantage of every opportunity.

    36:17-36:21

We use the strength of our youth, those of us who still have it.

    36:23-36:28

But God, we wouldn't get so reckless that we do things that we regret, dishonor you.

    36:31-36:50

Father, I pray that we would embrace this type of lifestyle, because as we've talked about through our infant dedication today, we are teaching these kids the Word of God, but we're also teaching them what it means to follow Jesus Christ by the example that we give.

    36:51-36:57

So Father, let us show these children this example that You've given us today.

    36:59-37:01

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

  • 00:48-00:53

All right, open your Bibles with me please to the book of Ecclesiastes chapter 9.

    00:56-01:05

We're gonna be picking up in verse 11 and if you're still turning there I'd like to remind you that we are not in control.

    01:07-01:11

And if you don't believe that, have kids.

    01:14-01:17

And if you don't have kids, I'm sure you know somebody that does.

    01:18-01:21

Ask them if you can come over to their house for the afternoon.

    01:23-01:26

And you will learn that we are not in control.

    01:28-01:34

My family and I moved to Chicago for a season back in 2010, and my kids were five and four.

    01:36-01:40

And I drove the big yellow Penske truck, pulled into the parking lot.

    01:40-01:49

were staying in these apartments and our apartment was actually an upstairs apartment and underneath this was the downstairs apartment.

    01:49-02:05

So as we're unloading the Penske truck, as soon as we pull in, Owen, like I said he was five at the time, he just takes off running and he runs right into the downstairs neighbor's apartment.

    02:06-02:08

Just opens the door and runs right in.

    02:10-02:13

and fatherly instinct, I chase after him.

    02:15-02:17

Some of you, this isn't sinking in.

    02:18-02:20

So we're gonna tell it from another perspective.

    02:21-02:38

Imagine that you're just sitting there with your family in your living room, like you normally do, when all of a sudden this kid comes running in and his dad right behind him, and all of a sudden we're standing in the middle of these people's living room.

    02:39-02:49

And this guy was the dad, the man of the house was like, "Wait, wait, who's this kid?" And then I run in behind him and he's like, "What's going on here?" And like, he's obviously on defense, right?

    02:49-02:50

I'm thinking I'm gonna get shot.

    02:50-02:54

So all of a sudden, I'm standing in the middle of these people's living room.

    02:55-02:59

And I'm like, "We're the new neighbors.

    03:02-03:07

Where I come from in my country, this is how we meet people." Like, where are you from?

    03:08-03:08

    Pittsburgh.

    03:11-03:13

    So I profusely apologize.

    03:14-03:16

I'm like, look, I'm so sorry.

    03:16-03:19

My son, he, you know, we just moved here.

    03:19-03:20

He didn't know where he was going.

    03:20-03:22

He just kind of ran in and I kind of got scared.

    03:22-03:23

    I'm so sorry.

    03:23-03:25

Like, we're not freaks or anything.

    03:25-03:26

    We're your upstairs neighbors.

    03:27-03:28

And I'm just, I'm so sorry.

    03:28-03:32

And well, finally the dude calmed down 'cause he was a little agitated at first.

    03:32-03:32

    He calmed down.

    03:32-03:33

    Everything's good.

    03:33-03:34

    Everything's good.

    03:35-03:45

So we go upstairs to our apartment, and the man of our downstairs neighbor, he went out into his patio to have a cigarette and calm down.

    03:46-03:52

Well, I had our dog, and I said it was a long ride for him.

    03:52-03:58

So I put him out on our deck, 'cause the guy below us had a patio, and we had a deck, don't get ahead of me.

    04:00-04:00

    (audience laughing)

    04:01-04:06

We had a deck with wooden slats, And poor Gordy was thirsty.

    04:07-04:09

So I got him a big bowl of water.

    04:10-04:12

And he just immediately put his face in the bowl.

    04:13-04:13

    (slurping)

    04:13-04:17

And you know how like dogs, when they're thirsty, slurping and slobbering.

    04:17-04:18

    (slurping)

    04:18-04:32

And then Gordy was like, oink, and flipped the bowl over so that my new neighbor, I was just in his living room by the way, my new neighbor had dog drool water rain down on his head.

    04:33-04:37

And he was like, "Get away!" like Aaron put everything back in the truck.

    04:38-04:39

    We're going back to Pittsburgh.

    04:42-04:43

You're like, what's the point of that story?

    04:43-04:46

The point is we are not in control.

    04:47-04:55

The point is this, as much as I try to be organized, I've learned that I have very little control over my life.

    04:56-04:59

I have very little control over what happens to me.

    04:59-05:09

And as we get to this particular passage in Ecclesiastes, Solomon, who's searching for the meaning of life, right?

    05:09-05:10

    That's what we've been on.

    05:10-05:12

    That's really what Ecclesiastes is.

    05:13-05:18

It's a Holy Spirit inspired rant.

    05:18-05:20

Christian, do the kids still call it a rant?

    05:21-05:27

Okay, it's a Holy Spirit inspired rant as he's searching for the meaning of life and what works and what doesn't.

    05:27-05:34

And in this passage, he addresses what is our biggest frustration in life.

    05:34-05:38

and that's this, you can't control everything.

    05:40-05:43

Not everything happens the way that you expect that it's going to happen.

    05:46-05:48

    I can't control everything.

    05:50-05:54

But there is exactly one thing that I can control.

    05:56-06:03

I can control how I respond to what happens to me.

    06:05-06:15

You know, life circumstances, other people and their choices, I have no control over those things.

    06:17-06:21

And there's somebody today that has to have that funeral.

    06:23-07:29

But the one thing that I can control, the one thing, the exactly one thing that I can control. The one thing that only I can control is my walk with the Lord. And in that, living according to His wisdom. And we're going to talk about this today, living a life where things are out of our control, but at the same time living according to the wisdom of God. And I'd like to remind you that when we talk about wisdom, that's different than knowledge, right? Knowledge is just facts. Knowledge is, I know some verses and some things that the Bible says. That's knowledge, and knowledge is good, but knowledge isn't enough. Wisdom is actually applying the knowledge. Wisdom says this, God's word makes decisions for me. That's what wisdom says. Wisdom says, I need the power of God's Spirit to enable me to live the life that He's called me to live according to His wisdom.

    07:31-07:36

And that's why the Gospel of Jesus Christ is so important.

    07:36-07:41

Because if you're listening to this and you're not a believer, none of this is going to make any difference to you.

    07:43-08:00

Because biblically, when you believe in Jesus Christ, when you turn from your sin and you receive Him, The Bible says that you are born again, God pronounces you righteous, and God's Holy Spirit comes and lives inside you to give you the power to live the life that He's called you to.

    08:01-08:05

And if you've never done that, today is the day.

    08:07-08:11

And if you're not sure if you've done that, come and see me after service.

    08:13-08:14

    That's the most important thing.

    08:17-09:25

9.11 Solomon says, "Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all." things don't turn out how you would think they should turn out, right? We see this all the time in sports, right? Oh, this team is going to destroy this team and it doesn't happen. Cinderella story. We see this all the time in politics, right? There's no way this candidate can win. And somehow he does. And we've all We've all been there just personally in our lives that we have these plans, and these big plans, and everything just sort of falls apart and it doesn't happen the way that we think that it should.

    09:25-09:33

And Solomon says, "Time and chance happen to us all." Now we know God is sovereign and nothing happens outside of His control.

    09:33-10:08

What Solomon is saying is from the under the sun, living on earth perspective, it just looks like sometimes we are the victims bad luck, right? Look at verse 12, he says, "For man does not know his time, like fish that are taken in an evil net." Can we stop there and acknowledge that? He doesn't say fish taken in a net. This isn't just a net. This is an evil net. "And like birds that that are caught in a snare.

    10:10-10:21

So the children of man are snared in an evil time when it suddenly falls upon them." Again, Solomon's point, things don't happen the way you think they do and things can fall apart very quickly, can't they?

    10:22-10:27

All of a sudden you're in the middle of a divorce that you never thought that you were going to experience.

    10:27-10:29

    Like, what?

    10:31-10:35

Or you went to the doctor and got a diagnosis that you weren't expecting.

    10:36-10:37

    My life's forever different.

    10:40-10:42

You experience the death of someone close to you.

    10:43-10:46

How am I going to go on?

    10:46-10:50

My whole life just changed so suddenly.

    10:52-10:53

That's what he's talking about here.

    10:55-10:57

There's so much that we can't control.

    10:59-11:05

And you know what, as people, We are really funny.

    11:06-11:21

Because there's all this stuff that we can't control, and we fret about that, we're frustrated by that, and we get so bent out of shape over all these things that we can't control, and what we end up doing is neglecting the things that we can control.

    11:24-11:25

And we're gonna change that today.

    11:26-11:31

So on your outline, very simply, Control what you can, forget what you can't.

    11:31-11:32

    All right?

    11:33-11:36

Church, we are going to focus on controlling what we can.

    11:38-11:42

And we're going to start recognizing these things that have us so stressed out and frustrated.

    11:43-11:45

We're gonna hand those over to the Lord.

    11:45-11:51

Say, "God, I can't control this, but you can." Are you with me?

    11:53-11:54

    Two of you are, awesome.

    11:54-11:55

Do I need to start over?

    11:56-11:57

    Are you with me?

    11:58-12:01

Okay, number one, write this down.

    12:01-12:06

I can't control popular opinion, but I can control my reputation.

    12:08-12:11

I can't control popular opinion, but I can't control my reputation.

    12:13-12:16

Okay, so here Solomon's like, oh, okay, okay, okay, quick story.

    12:17-12:22

He says, I have also seen this example of wisdom under the sun and it seemed great to me.

    12:24-12:27

There was a little city with few men in it.

    12:28-12:36

"And a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siege works against it." You get the picture?

    12:36-12:37

    You get the picture?

    12:37-12:46

Solomon says in verse 15, "But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city." Wow.

    12:47-12:48

    Awesome, right?

    12:50-12:55

He says, "Yet no one remembered that poor man." What?

    12:56-12:58

He says, "But I say that wisdom is better than might.

    13:00-13:08

Though the poor man's wisdom is despised and his words are not heard." Okay, so Solomon says, "I got this story for you.

    13:09-13:24

There's this poor wise man in this little city and this big king was coming and he was going to squash it and this guy saved the city and no one remembered or cared." Moving on, right?

    13:24-13:29

You're like, "Wait, wait, wait. Why? Why is that?" Well, he tells us. Look at verses 17 and 18.

    13:30-13:35

He says, "The words of the wise, heard and quiet, are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools.

    13:35-13:48

Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner destroys much good." See, true wisdom is ignored. It's like a whisper, while foolishness is broadcast through a megaphone.

    13:51-13:55

Now, verse 17, when it talks about ruler, A ruler is not always a king.

    13:57-14:00

This refers to somebody that just has the ear of the people.

    14:02-14:07

And who is it in our day that has the ear of the people?

    14:08-14:09

    It's actors and athletes, right?

    14:10-14:12

That's who has the ear of the people.

    14:14-14:15

    Actors and athletes.

    14:15-14:16

    And it baffles me.

    14:17-14:18

    It absolutely baffles me.

    14:19-14:23

I don't know why I'm supposed to care about what a basketball player thinks about the president.

    14:25-14:28

    Like, go dribble.

    14:30-14:36

I don't know why I'm supposed to care what some actor thinks about gun rights.

    14:39-14:44

Go pretend to be a rogue cop or whatever.

    14:47-14:52

And Solomon says your wisdom is just drowned out by fools!

    14:53-14:53

    Like, why?

    14:56-14:58

Because that's what people are interested in.

    14:59-15:01

    People are interested in foolishness.

    15:02-15:09

Now we would think, I mean, it just makes sense, but we would think that people are interested in wisdom.

    15:11-15:12

    But they're not.

    15:13-15:15

    People are interested in foolishness.

    15:17-15:18

    You don't believe me?

    15:19-15:21

The Kardashians have a TV show.

    15:23-15:28

And that gets watched more than Taylor Brown's sermon got streamed when he preached here.

    15:30-15:31

I think he should have their viewers.

    15:32-15:34

I think he had some great things to say.

    15:36-15:42

Sorry, Taylor, the world by and large in general is more important than what the Kardashians are doing.

    15:45-15:46

That's the kind of stuff Solomon's talking about here.

    15:48-16:00

I'll bet you, I'll bet you in the past few years, just take the past two or three years, I'll bet you have heard more about what Antonio Brown is doing than you've heard about what John MacArthur is doing.

    16:02-16:09

And there are some of you right now who know exactly who Antonio Brown is, but you have no idea who John MacArthur is.

    16:09-16:10

    And that's my point.

    16:13-16:15

    It just bothers me.

    16:16-16:18

    It just bothers me.

    16:20-16:26

See these clowns paraded on TV and everybody just can't wait to hear what they're gonna tweet.

    16:26-16:28

And it just, it bothers me.

    16:30-16:35

But then I'm reminded, I can't control popular opinion.

    16:37-16:38

    I can't control that.

    16:39-16:41

The world hates God's wisdom, have you noticed?

    16:41-16:48

And they drown it out with all this foolishness, but I can control my reputation.

    16:50-17:03

That's where he goes, look at chapter 10, verse one, when he says, "Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment "give off a stench." Ew.

    17:03-17:06

So a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.

    17:09-17:20

You can't control what everybody else, You know, the popular opinion, you need to focus on guarding your integrity, protecting your reputation.

    17:23-17:30

And that's this reminder here in chapter 10, verse one, Solomon says one mistake can ruin an otherwise great legacy, right?

    17:31-17:44

Like David and Bathsheba, like Ravi Zachariah, like Joe Paterno, You know how it is, look, you know how it is.

    17:45-17:52

You can say 10,000 good words and one bad word.

    17:53-17:54

And what are people going to remember?

    17:57-17:57

    Right?

    17:59-18:02

You can't control popular opinion, but you can control your reputation.

    18:03-18:04

    Solomon says, go after that.

    18:06-18:07

    Number two, write this down.

    18:07-18:09

    I can't control people's conduct.

    18:14-18:17

But I can't control how I respond to people.

    18:20-18:20

    Moving on.

    18:21-18:22

    Is it toasty in here?

    18:22-18:23

    Okay.

    18:24-18:24

    All right.

    18:24-18:26

We must have forgot to pay the air conditioning bill.

    18:28-18:34

So a wise man's heart inclines him to the right, but a fool's heart to the left.

    18:37-18:41

"Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense, and he says to everyone that he is a fool.

    18:42-18:55

If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for calmness will lay great offenses to rest." The question, are you wise or are you a fool?

    18:55-18:56

    Which one are you?

    18:58-19:07

You would say, "Well, I think I'm pretty wise." Well, Solomon says the answer to that question according to the way you live.

    19:10-19:15

The way you live shows whether you're a wise person or a foolish person.

    19:16-19:27

And Solomon says, "And a fool shows his true colors eventually." The fool makes it really obvious to everyone that he is a fool.

    19:29-19:30

Then I'll look at verse five.

    19:30-19:42

He says, "There is an evil that I've seen under the sun, "as it were an error proceeding from the ruler." Look at this, "Folly is set in many high places "and the rich sit in a low place.

    19:42-19:55

"I have seen slaves on horses "and princes walking on the ground like slaves." Solomon's like, "Oh, speaking of wise and full, "here's a problem.

    19:56-20:06

"When rulers put incompetent people "in positions of authority, and pass over the qualified people.

    20:07-20:11

Solomon says, "I've seen that a lot." Have you ever seen that?

    20:13-20:37

Have you ever seen somebody put in a position of authority and you're like, "I don't know why they're in that position." During the whole COVID thing, the doctor who was leading Pennsylvania through that was a mentally ill doctor who treats adolescents.

    20:40-20:41

I'm like, why was he put in that position?

    20:43-20:45

I'm like, you mean in the entire state of Pennsylvania?

    20:46-20:47

How many people are in this state?

    20:48-20:48

    How many?

    20:49-20:50

Oh, Jesse, I should have looked that up.

    20:51-20:59

You mean of all the people in Pennsylvania, we don't have one infectious disease doctor, a, what's it called?

    20:59-21:01

    The virologist, is that right?

    21:01-21:02

    Is that a word?

    21:03-21:03

    Right?

    21:03-21:05

We don't have one of those?

    21:06-21:09

Like how did this person get to this position of authority?

    21:11-21:13

That's what Solomon's talking about here.

    21:15-21:22

You know, the president promised and delivered that he would only pick a black woman for the Supreme Court.

    21:24-21:28

I'm like, is that regardless of who may be better qualified from any ethnic background?

    21:30-21:35

It's getting really uncomfortable in here because right now, about half of you are going, oh, hang on a second, Pastor Jeff.

    21:35-21:37

I think that's racist what you just said.

    21:38-21:39

    Is it?

    21:41-21:41

    Is it?

    21:41-21:44

Okay, let's, okay, since you brought it up.

    21:46-21:47

    (congregation laughing)

    21:47-21:49

    Which statement is racist?

    21:49-21:49

    You tell me.

    21:51-22:01

I'm going to pick the most qualified candidate regardless of skin color or gender, or I'm only picking a candidate of a certain skin color and gender.

    22:02-22:04

Which one of those statements is racist?

    22:06-22:08

    All right, calm down.

    22:11-22:17

Have you ever been passed over from a promotion at work because someone much less qualified got that job?

    22:18-22:19

    That's what Solomon's talking about.

    22:19-22:21

    He's like, it's so infuriating.

    22:21-22:22

    Solomon's like, I've seen this.

    22:23-22:26

the wrong people in the wrong positions.

    22:27-22:33

And God, as much as I'd like to, I can't control the choices that other people make.

    22:35-22:40

But I can control how I respond to people.

    22:42-22:43

    Look at verse four again.

    22:45-22:45

    Look at verse four again.

    22:45-23:23

He says, "If the anger of the ruler rises against you, look, do not leave your place, for calmness will lay great offenses to rest." In other words, Solomon says, "Look, just because somebody else loses their temper doesn't mean that you have to lose yours." Proverbs 15, one says, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." Solomon says that in the face of anger, it is better and wiser to set a tone of calmness than it would be to just turn around and quit your job because your boss got mad.

    23:25-23:31

A statement that we all need to learn, church, is this one, "My conduct isn't based on how other people treat me.

    23:31-23:36

My conduct is based on the Word of God." I'm going to say that again so you can write that down.

    23:36-23:37

You need to learn this one.

    23:37-23:41

"My conduct is not based on how other people treat me.

    23:41-23:53

My conduct is based on the Word of God." Solomon says, "Hey, I see all these infuriating things happening, and you know what, you can't control other people.

    23:54-23:57

But you always have the choice on how you're going to respond.

    23:59-24:01

    All right, number three.

    24:02-24:04

    Here's one, I can't control accidents happening.

    24:06-24:08

But I can control how carefully I work.

    24:10-24:11

Look at verses eight and nine.

    24:12-24:15

He says, "He who digs a pit will fall into it.

    24:17-24:20

"And a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.

    24:20-24:30

"He who quarries stones is hurt by them, "and he who splits logs is endangered by them." Like, what's he saying?

    24:30-24:31

    What's he saying there?

    24:32-24:33

    He's just saying this.

    24:35-24:36

    Accidents happen.

    24:38-24:47

I do a lot of reading, studying these passages, and so many people try to spiritualize these verses and try to make them say more than they actually say.

    24:49-24:51

I don't think these are metaphors.

    24:53-24:58

I think all Solomon is saying here is, in a world where we can't control everything.

    25:00-25:01

    Sound like a movie preview.

    25:02-25:05

In a world where we can't control everything.

    25:06-25:07

    He says accidents happen.

    25:09-25:12

There's inherent danger in just about everything you do in life.

    25:13-25:17

Solomon's like, "Well, accidents happen." And you're like, "So what?

    25:18-25:19

    Thanks, I knew that.

    25:19-25:21

So what?" Well, look at the next two verses.

    25:21-25:23

He gives us some insight here.

    25:23-25:34

He says, "If the iron is blunt and one does not sharpen the edge, he must use more strength, but wisdom helps one to succeed." In other words, lack of planning nullifies skill.

    25:35-25:43

Solomon says, "Wisdom says, take care of your tools." If you work smart, you don't have to work as hard.

    25:46-25:59

And then verse 11, he says, "If the serpent bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage to the charmer." So not only do we see lack of planning nullifies skill, but carelessness nullifies skill.

    26:00-26:05

Now look, when I read verse 11, if a serpent bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage to the charmer.

    26:06-26:07

I'm just gonna shoot straight with you.

    26:10-26:12

I don't know anything about how to charm a snake.

    26:14-26:17

No idea, no background, no experience.

    26:18-26:20

I don't have any friends that are snake charmers.

    26:21-26:22

    I don't know a thing.

    26:23-26:33

And this might sound like I'm speaking out of ignorance, but one thing that I do know for sure, don't let it bite you, right?

    26:36-26:38

    It's like, you're a snake charmer, bro.

    26:39-26:45

You should have learned this from charming school or your snake charming mentor or work experience.

    26:46-26:49

But Solomon says, you know, if you're careless, that nullifies your skill.

    26:51-26:55

And you can be very, very good at something and very, very careless.

    26:56-27:00

And he goes, that's not gonna end well if you're careless, no matter how skillful you are.

    27:01-27:03

I remember this story when I was a kid.

    27:03-27:09

It was on Channel 11 News that this man was a skydiver.

    27:10-27:54

and they said the man fell to his death because he jumped out of the plane without his parachute. They said he forgot to strap it on. And I'm not a skydiver either. But if I'm making a checklist of things that I need before I jump out of a plane, parachutes in the top four. And that's exactly what Solomon saying here, like, doesn't matter how skilled you are, if you're careless, no es bueno. He says, wisdom says, look, accidents happen, but you got to be prepared and you got to be careful and that will certainly minimize the risk.

    27:54-28:05

Very practical stuff here that he's saying. I can't control accidents happening, but I can control how carefully I work. And then finally today, Number four, I can't control what people say.

    28:07-28:09

But I can control what I say.

    28:10-28:17

Look at verses 12-14, he says, "The words of a wise man's mouth went in favor, but the lips of a fool consume him.

    28:18-28:23

The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is evil madness.

    28:24-28:38

A fool multiplies words, though no man knows what is to be, "And who can tell him what will be after him?" In other words, he says, "Fools talk just to be heard." You know anybody like that?

    28:39-28:43

And you're like, "You Pastor Jeff." I'm like, "Ha ha." But you know anybody like that?

    28:43-28:45

They just talk to be heard, right?

    28:45-28:46

    They can't stand silence.

    28:47-28:50

And it doesn't matter that they have no idea what they're talking about.

    28:51-28:53

They have no problem talking about it.

    28:54-29:00

Solomon says, "This guy, he doesn't even know what's going on today, let alone what's going to happen tomorrow.

    29:01-29:18

Then verse 15, he says, "The toil of a fool wearies him, for he does not know the way to the city." He says, "Foolishness always ends up in incompetence." He can't handle the easiest job.

    29:19-29:20

He can't find the way to the city.

    29:21-29:29

It'd be like sitting someone down here being like, "Hey, can you show me how to get to Wexford?" And he's like, "Uh, uh, I don't know where that is.

    29:29-29:37

I don't know how to get there." Incompetence can't handle the easiest job.

    29:39-29:53

That's why we have a whole generation of people that are coming up who are going to educate you on why abortion is a right, who are going to tell you why it's necessary that those who paid off their student loans pay for somebody else's loans.

    29:54-29:56

They're going to educate you on all of that.

    29:57-29:59

But these same people don't know how to make toast.

    30:00-30:03

And that's if you spot them the bread and the toaster.

    30:05-30:09

And that's what Solomon's saying here, wisdom and foolishness, it always shows up.

    30:09-30:12

And specifically here, he says, it shows up by what comes out of your mouth.

    30:13-30:17

    I'm reminded of the words of Jesus, Matthew 12, 34, Matthew 1, 2, 3, 4.

    30:17-30:25

He says, "For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." Are you a wise or are you a fool?

    30:25-30:27

Well, let's have a conversation and we'll find out.

    30:28-30:30

Because Jesus says your heart's like a well.

    30:30-30:37

And every time you talk, all you're doing is sending the bucket down to the well and you're pulling out what's in there.

    30:37-30:44

The heart is revealed by what you talk about, subject matter, how you speak, the words you say, it reveals your heart.

    30:47-30:49

I can't control what other people say.

    30:50-30:51

We've all been there, haven't we?

    30:53-30:54

    Like, please, please stop talking.

    30:54-30:56

    Please, please stop talking.

    30:56-30:58

    Please stop, stop, stop gossiping.

    30:59-31:01

Stop, stop, stop talking about that person.

    31:02-31:05

Stop telling these dirty jokes, stop.

    31:05-31:06

    We've all been there.

    31:08-31:13

And that we can't control what other people say, but I can control what I say.

    31:15-31:15

    Right?

    31:15-31:16

I can control what I say.

    31:18-31:30

That's why again, verse 12, He says, "The words of the wise man's mouth win him favor." We can hurt ourselves or we can help ourselves by what we say.

    31:31-31:34

I don't have to jump in with the perverted jokes.

    31:35-31:38

I don't have to join the gossip, add to it, pile on.

    31:38-31:39

I don't have to do that.

    31:42-31:50

I can instead win favor by encouraging people, by comforting people, by lifting people up.

    31:53-31:54

That's what I can use my words for.

    31:56-31:56

    God help us.

    31:58-32:05

So much of your life is beyond your control.

    32:07-32:12

And this week, you're gonna walk out these doors into cooler air this week.

    32:14-32:17

You're going to hear foolishness spewed from the media.

    32:20-32:22

You're gonna have to deal with fools acting like fools.

    32:25-32:27

This week, you could possibly have an accident of some kind.

    32:28-32:28

    I hope that you don't.

    32:30-32:33

But for sure this week, you're going to hear some foolish talk.

    32:36-32:38

Like, what can I do about that?

    32:40-32:40

    Nothing.

    32:43-32:44

    Control what you can.

    32:46-32:48

    Forget what you can't.

    32:49-33:05

Your conduct, your response to what happens, your work ethic, your mouth, the only person on the planet that can control that is you.

    33:06-33:07

    Are you?

    33:09-33:10

    Will you?

    33:11-33:12

    Let's pray.

    33:13-33:31

"Father in heaven, we come alongside Solomon under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, we come alongside him and then honestly Father we're just like, "Yeah, yeah." Life is very frustrating because so much of life is out of our control.

    33:33-33:48

And if this king, who had all the money in the world, and all the influence in the world, if he felt this, we would be completely ignorant not to recognize it in our own lives.

    33:50-34:00

But Father, today I pray for this flock, whether they're sitting here, whether they're streaming this at home, whether they're listening to this podcast later, I pray for this flock.

    34:02-34:06

Father, we would stop getting so stressed about the things that we can't control.

    34:09-34:17

And under the authority of your word and by the power of your Holy Spirit, our focus would be solely on what we can control.

    34:19-34:21

And that is walking in your wisdom.

    34:25-34:26

    Thereby glorifying your name.

    34:27-34:31

    In Jesus' name. Amen.

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Share something in your life that you have no control over. In that situation, what CAN you control (about yourself)?

  3. In which area do you have the hardest time with self-control? Why? How can that change for you?

  4. Since God’s wisdom is always successful and effective, why do you think the world is so enamored with foolishness (celebrity opinions, fools elected as rulers)? See Eccl 9:16-17, 10:5-6.

  • 00:48-00:51

Open your Bibles with me, please, to the book of Ecclesiastes.

    00:52-00:53

And we will be in chapter 8.

    00:56-01:02

You know, it's my birthday this month, and don't applaud.

    01:05-01:08

I said that because you didn't, but I've got to be honest with you.

    01:10-01:18

I really thought that when I hit this age, I would know a lot more than I actually do.

    01:21-01:22

    What are you talking about?

    01:22-01:24

I'll tell you what I'm talking about.

    01:26-01:27

    Ratchet straps.

    01:30-01:32

You realize I'm 46 years old.

    01:33-01:35

I have no idea how to work these things.

    01:37-01:41

And look, I know some of you right now are like, Pastor Jeff, that's so lame.

    01:42-01:45

That's like Legos, man! That's so easy to use!

    01:47-01:48

    I can't do it.

    01:51-01:54

And it's hard to stand in front of you as your pastor and admit that.

    01:56-01:57

I don't know how to use this.

    01:59-02:03

And I've tried a couple times privately.

    02:06-02:15

But there have been many times that I've been helping someone move or ratchet something down in the back of a truck praying that they just do it, right?

    02:15-02:21

That they're not like, "Jeff, here, would you ratchet that?" I'm like, I've managed to dodge that bullet for like 46 years.

    02:23-02:31

And then a couple of weeks ago, we got a new couch and I called my good friend, Ben Mall.

    02:31-02:32

I said, "Hey, can I borrow your truck?

    02:32-02:43

I got a whole couch." And Ben, he says, "Yeah." He goes, "And I threw some ratchet straps in the back for you." Like, you are a pal.

    02:47-02:48

I'm just confessing this to you.

    02:48-02:56

I didn't, I just couldn't tell him that I didn't know how to use those because I want them to like me and respect me.

    02:57-02:58

And I thought that might be the end of the relationship.

    03:00-03:02

Like, I can't be friends with somebody so ignorant.

    03:02-03:03

    So I didn't tell him.

    03:05-03:09

So I drove to the store and you had to go around back to where the trailers are to get the couch.

    03:09-03:14

And we loaded the truck up, or loaded the couch into the truck, and I'll be honest with you, I tried.

    03:15-03:21

I hooked the things up to the truck, and I just, I don't know what to do with this thing.

    03:23-03:28

And my son's there, he's feeling like his dad's a big failure.

    03:31-03:48

And then, I saw this white pickup truck drove by and stopped but I ran to that truck and I'm like, excuse me, like, I'm so sorry to bother you.

    03:48-03:49

Do you know how to work one of these things?

    03:50-03:56

And of course he did, because he was like, oh yeah, that's all you do.

    03:56-03:58

You just hook that up, you know, and then you take this part and you're.

    04:01-04:04

And I'm watching him do it and I'm like, well, that looks easy.

    04:05-04:06

I'm like, hey, thank you so much for your help.

    04:07-04:11

Then I went back to Ben's truck and that couch and I still couldn't get this thing to work.

    04:14-04:17

And if you're looking for a resolution to the story, there's not one.

    04:19-04:20

I don't know how to work that thing.

    04:22-04:29

And the honest thing though is, there's a lot of stuff that I don't know.

    04:31-04:35

And there's a lot of stuff that I've been trying to figure out for a long time that I can't.

    04:37-04:44

And some things are a lot more important than ratchet straps that I can't figure out.

    04:45-04:54

You see, we're going through Ecclesiastes, and we're on Solomon's quest for the meaning of life, and he's told us so many times that there's things that we don't know.

    04:55-05:00

There's things that we try to wrap our brains around, the things that we try to figure out.

    05:00-05:04

But here, in this passage, I got some incredible news for you.

    05:04-05:08

In this passage, here are three things that you can know for sure.

    05:10-05:18

And this is so important, church, because these aren't just like factoids, little nuggets of information.

    05:20-05:22

    These are three truths.

    05:24-05:27

They won't just change your life, OK?

    05:29-05:35

Listen, they will change the way that you live.

    05:37-05:47

Three truths that if you embrace these three things, you are guaranteed to enjoy your life.

    05:48-05:50

Let's be honest, some of us are miserable.

    05:53-05:54

I have been a lot lately.

    05:56-05:57

So this is gonna be good for me too.

    05:59-06:06

So on your outline, I'm still trying to work on getting these things shorter and I didn't make it happen this week.

    06:06-06:07

    So here you go.

    06:08-06:11

Three things I know for certain that allow me to enjoy life.

    06:12-06:13

    All right?

    06:15-06:17

So number one, write this down.

    06:18-06:21

I can't know everything God is doing.

    06:24-06:27

I'm gonna give you a chance to say that out loud.

    06:27-06:30

And I know I'm gonna share with you, You know what the text says.

    06:31-06:35

But as an act of good faith, I want you to say it out loud.

    06:35-06:38

I can't know everything God is doing.

    06:39-06:40

    Ready? Say it.

    06:44-06:44

    Amen.

    06:45-06:47

That's all Solomon has to say about that.

    06:47-06:48

    Verse 16.

    06:49-07:29

He says, "When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, neither day nor night do one's eyes sleep. Then I saw all the work of God." That man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. "However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out. Even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out." Stop there. The point is this, he's saying life is is too complicated and it's too vast to be able to figure everything out.

    07:30-07:36

You see that three times, you can't figure it out, can't figure it out, or find it out rather, sorry, can't find it out.

    07:37-07:38

    Three times he says that.

    07:39-07:48

He says no one can be smart enough, you can't work hard enough, you can't work long enough because you'll always end up with more questions than answers.

    07:51-07:52

I mean, think about this, church.

    07:54-08:07

So much of your life, the things that have happened to you, it's been determined by things that are beyond your control, hasn't it?

    08:09-08:12

So much of your life determined by things that are beyond your control.

    08:13-08:13

    You're like, what?

    08:14-08:16

    About where you were born?

    08:18-08:20

about when in history you were born.

    08:23-08:36

Millions of choices over the course of your life that were made by you, and made by other people, some people that you've never even met, but their choices have affected you and shaped your life.

    08:38-08:40

It's staggering to think about it.

    08:42-08:46

And he says in verse 17, This is the work of God.

    08:48-08:57

Everything that's happened in your life has been orchestrated directly by the hand of God.

    09:00-09:01

    It's staggering to think about.

    09:04-09:06

He says we can't figure it out.

    09:06-09:07

    We can't find it out.

    09:08-09:10

He goes on, look at 9:1.

    09:11-09:39

He says, "But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God." There it is again. But look at this next phrase. He says, "Whether it is love or hate, man does not know. Both are before him." Okay, so he says again that we're in the hand of God, but what's this love or hate thing that he's talking about? Here's what he means.

    09:39-09:42

and I want you to listen very closely because this smacks us all in the face.

    09:43-09:54

It is hard to judge solely from the events that happen to us whether we have God's approval or disapproval.

    09:54-09:57

I'm going to talk more about that in a second, so just hang on.

    09:58-10:10

He's saying if you simply look at life based on the circumstances that happen to you, it's hard to determine just from that God loves you or hates you.

    10:12-10:13

Like, well, what do you mean?

    10:15-10:16

I've heard this all the time.

    10:18-10:24

When something bad happens to a person, they immediately jump to, God hates me.

    10:26-10:29

I'm having financial problems, God must hate me.

    10:29-10:34

You know what, my marriage is on the rocks and I've tried so hard to save it, God must hate me.

    10:36-10:44

Or somebody who's in an accident, Somebody was crippled or killed or so badly injured, and it's, "Well, you know, God hates me.

    10:46-10:49

God hates me." That's what Solomon's talking about.

    10:50-10:51

    You're just looking at events.

    10:54-10:59

"Well, if it's bad, then maybe God hates me." But I've seen the other side too.

    11:01-11:02

    And it's not accurate either.

    11:02-11:07

That when something good happens, That means that God really loves me.

    11:09-11:11

You know, I got that better job.

    11:12-11:13

    I got that promotion, God.

    11:14-11:15

That just shows that God really loves me.

    11:17-11:24

Or, you know, I hear ladies say, "I found a good man, finally found a good man." That just shows that God really loves me.

    11:26-11:27

    I beat COVID.

    11:28-11:29

    God loves me most.

    11:30-11:30

    I beat COVID.

    11:33-11:39

Well, I'd like to remind you that prosperity is not always the sign that God is happy with you.

    11:40-11:44

Because even the most wicked people prosper sometimes.

    11:46-11:50

And adversity is not always the sign that God is punishing you.

    11:50-11:52

I'd encourage you to read the book of Job sometime.

    11:54-11:56

And I just had a sermon on each of those.

    11:59-12:09

But Solomon's saying, big picture, "Look, we can't see, we can't know, we can't understand everything that God is doing, which is why we have to be okay with some degree of mystery.

    12:10-12:17

We have to be okay with that." That's why one of my favorite verses in the Bible is Deuteronomy 29.29.

    12:17-12:19

I love this verse. I quote it all the time.

    12:20-12:21

    Look at this.

    12:21-12:27

"The secret things belong to the Lord our God." Are there secret things?

    12:28-12:29

    Yes or no?

    12:30-12:31

    Yes, there are.

    12:31-12:33

There are secret things that we don't know.

    12:33-12:33

    Who does?

    12:33-12:51

He says, Moses says, "They belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and our children forever that we may do all the words of this law." God wants us to know things.

    12:51-12:52

    Do you realize that?

    12:52-12:58

God wants us to know things so badly that he says, "Here's what I'm gonna do.

    12:58-13:07

I'm gonna write it down and I'm gonna put it in a book and I'm gonna make it the best selling, most widely available book on the planet because I want you to know some things.

    13:07-13:11

And God's like, here's the things that I want you to know, right?

    13:13-13:19

But I love Deuteronomy 29.29 because it reminds us that we can't know everything, we can't.

    13:21-13:21

    Like, why not?

    13:21-13:23

Well, first of all, we're not capable.

    13:26-13:28

But the other thing, I was thinking about this this week.

    13:28-13:31

What if God decided He was going to reveal everything to us?

    13:31-13:33

God's like, "You know, I'm gonna reveal everything.

    13:33-13:37

Everything, Jack, I'm gonna reveal everything." How big would the Bible be?

    13:39-13:40

Come on, nobody would read that.

    13:41-13:42

It'd be like a trillion pages.

    13:43-13:44

    It'd be several trillion.

    13:44-13:47

    It'd be, who's reading that?

    13:50-13:56

But listen, this is an important point because some people will not accept Scripture.

    13:57-14:01

They won't accept the Word of God until they fully understand it all.

    14:02-14:03

Have you met somebody like that?

    14:03-14:04

    Are you somebody like that?

    14:05-14:07

I'm not gonna believe it until I understand it.

    14:08-14:10

Not gonna believe it until I understand it.

    14:11-14:12

    Guess what, pal?

    14:13-14:14

    You'll never believe it then.

    14:15-14:24

But I would say, if that's your attitude, I would say, with all due respect, that you're a hypocrite.

    14:25-14:30

Because do you realize how much stuff we do every day that we don't really understand how it works, but we do it and we believe it?

    14:31-14:33

    Because it works, right?

    14:34-14:34

    Like Wi-Fi.

    14:37-14:38

    I don't know how Wi-Fi works.

    14:38-14:39

    I use it every day.

    14:40-14:41

But I'm never like, you know what?

    14:42-14:48

I gotta check my messages, but I'm not gonna touch that until I really understand how the whole thing works.

    14:49-14:51

I don't understand how my car works either.

    14:52-14:55

You turn the key, it fires up, you push a little pedal, you go vroom, vroom.

    14:55-14:56

I don't know how all that works.

    14:58-14:59

Well, that's the sound my car makes.

    15:00-15:01

I don't know how that works.

    15:03-15:05

You know what it really baffles me?

    15:06-15:06

    Medicine.

    15:08-15:09

    I take medicine every day.

    15:10-15:16

How do those little ingredients know where to go, to which cell to do what function?

    15:16-15:17

I don't know how that works.

    15:17-15:18

    I take my vitamins.

    15:18-15:21

How do the vitamins know where to go in your body?

    15:21-15:23

How do they know how to do that?

    15:25-15:27

I take them every day, not knowing.

    15:28-15:31

I know they work, but I don't fully understand how they work.

    15:34-15:38

But when it comes to theology, I'm not going to believe until I have all the answers.

    15:39-15:44

You're a hypocrite, because you're never gonna have all the answers.

    15:46-15:49

I've shared with you before, my dog thinks I'm God.

    15:52-15:54

Food and water, infinite supply out of nowhere.

    15:54-15:56

"You know something else about my dog?

    15:56-15:57

"Let me tell you something else about my dog.

    15:57-15:59

"When I grab the leash, she's ready to go.

    16:01-16:02

"And she has no idea where we're going.

    16:04-16:07

"But here's the thing, it doesn't matter, right?

    16:08-16:20

"It doesn't matter." She's like, "We're going somewhere." But she doesn't sit there and say, "Until I understand where you're taking me "and why you're taking me there "and how long we're going to be there, I'm not going." She's never done that.

    16:21-16:23

She's just like, "Hey, I love you.

    16:23-16:26

I'm trusting you, I'll go wherever you want me to go.

    16:26-16:32

And I was thinking about that this week, to think, why can't we be more like that with God?

    16:32-16:35

    To say, I don't understand. I don't know everything.

    16:35-16:36

Where are we going? I don't know.

    16:37-16:41

But you know what, God, I love you, and I trust you, and I'm just going to follow wherever you lead me.

    16:44-16:54

But listen, church, you're not going to be free to enjoy your life until you accept this.

    16:56-17:08

That right now, in your life, the Lord is doing thousands of things that don't make any sense to you, but make total sense to Him.

    17:13-17:20

As a pastor, you know, and with a lot of people in some of the most tragic moments of their lives.

    17:21-17:22

    Why would God allow this?

    17:24-17:25

Boy, I wish I had an answer for that.

    17:26-17:30

People involved in accidents, sudden deaths, heart attacks.

    17:31-17:32

    Why would God allow this?

    17:32-17:49

I wish that I could just pull out a manual and say, "Well, here's exactly why that happened in your life." And I have to be honest with people and say, "I don't know." because with the Lord there's always a degree of mystery.

    17:51-17:55

That even if I think I fully understand everything He's doing, I definitely do not.

    17:57-18:17

You know, there's a saying around here that we use, "He is God, and I am not." I'm going to teach you another one today, it's this, "I can't know everything God is doing, and I'm okay with that." Let me take another run at that.

    18:18-18:19

    Let me hear it.

    18:19-18:28

"I can't know everything God is doing." That was really bad because you sounded like you had so much more conviction before I preached that.

    18:31-18:31

    No explainer.

    18:32-18:32

    Number two.

    18:33-18:34

    Let's try this one.

    18:36-18:41

"I only get one shot at life on earth." All right, I'm going to give you a chance to say that one.

    18:42-18:42

    You ready?

    18:46-18:48

Awesome. The rest of you? Okay, let's do it.

    18:48-18:51

I only get one shot at life on earth. Say it.

    18:52-18:53

I only get one shot at life on earth.

    18:54-18:56

Alright, look at verse 2 in chapter 9.

    18:56-19:10

He says, "It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice.

    19:10-19:12

As the good one is, so is the sinner.

    19:13-19:16

And he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.

    19:17-19:18

The same event happens to them all.

    19:19-19:19

    What's the same?

    19:20-19:21

    It's death.

    19:22-19:25

You're gonna see that's where he's going with this.

    19:26-19:29

    But death is the equalizer.

    19:31-19:32

And it comes to all of us.

    19:34-19:36

It forces us to face reality.

    19:36-19:37

    Look at verse three.

    19:37-19:38

He says, "This is an evil.

    19:41-19:45

and all that is done under the sun, that the same event happens to all.

    19:47-19:59

Also the hearts of the children of man are full of evil, and madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead." In other words, he's talking here about why there is death.

    20:00-20:00

    Why?

    20:01-20:02

    Why is there death?

    20:02-20:04

    There's death because there's sin.

    20:04-20:05

    That's what he's pointing out.

    20:08-20:17

Remember in the Garden of Eden, God told Adam and Eve eventually, don't eat off this one tree.

    20:17-20:20

But he says, the day you eat off of this tree, you will die.

    20:20-20:30

But interestingly, in the Hebrew, he says, "Dying you will die." Meaning when you sin, Adam, it will begin a process that will end with something.

    20:30-20:32

    Dying you will die.

    20:34-20:38

And you realize, church, that's something that we see every day in front of us.

    20:39-20:39

    We're all dying.

    20:40-20:41

    We're all wearing out.

    20:42-20:45

We're getting older and more wrinkly and grayer.

    20:48-20:49

    Dying, you will die.

    20:51-20:56

Romans 5.12 says, "Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man," that's Adam.

    20:58-21:13

And look at this, "death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sin." We were born dying because we inherited sin and we inherited death from Adam.

    21:17-21:18

    It's a harsh reality.

    21:21-21:22

    But it's still reality.

    21:22-21:23

You know what I read last week?

    21:24-21:28

I read the life expectancy in the U.S. dropped.

    21:28-21:29

    Did you hear this?

    21:30-21:37

It went from 77.3 years to 76.1 years.

    21:38-21:39

    The life expectancy dropped.

    21:42-21:45

And I don't know how your mind works, but here's how mine works.

    21:46-21:49

Okay, so the new life expectancy is 76.1 years.

    21:52-21:54

    And I'm 46.

    21:55-22:00

And I was thinking, you know, It's been 10 years since the church launched, right?

    22:00-22:03

A little more, but about 10 years since the church launched.

    22:03-22:07

And I think of my life from the time that Harvest launched until today.

    22:08-22:09

That's a unit of time, right?

    22:09-22:10

    10 years, you with me?

    22:12-22:17

According to the average, if we're just playing the average, I only get three more of those.

    22:19-22:22

That's if Jesus doesn't come back first, which I think he is.

    22:22-22:28

And that's if I don't die another way, murdered or heart attack or whatever.

    22:31-22:34

I'm glad that amuses you, the thought of me being murdered.

    22:38-22:42

    Anyways, you're like, he knows.

    22:43-22:48

Anyways, okay, a Harvest launch until today, 10 years.

    22:51-22:57

I get three more, I only get three more of those if we're just playing the averages.

    23:00-23:06

And I don't know why you're laughing because some of you get less than that if we're playing the averages.

    23:08-23:17

And some of you are still giggling and clapping, but some of you are over time if we're playing the averages.

    23:20-23:22

but you can't escape the fact that you're going to die.

    23:24-23:25

And you're like, well, thank you for the reminder, Pastor Jeff.

    23:26-23:26

Where are you going with this?

    23:27-23:27

    Here's where he's going.

    23:28-23:30

    Look at 4-6.

    23:33-23:39

"But he has hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

    23:40-23:46

For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

    23:47-24:10

Their love and their hate and their envy already perished and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the Sun." Now he's not saying there's no life after death because he makes that abundantly clear elsewhere in the book. That's not what he's saying here at all.

    24:11-24:55

Like, well what is he saying? Here's what Solomon's saying, listen, you get one shot at life. That's what he's saying. When you die, you can't return. Everything from your life, when you die, everything in your life is forever over. And he's saying that you don't get a do-over when it's done. You don't. Like, you know what, God? There are some things I didn't like. I'd like to change some things around. Let me, you know, let me, let me, let me get, can we give me a mulligan on that life? Let me go back and...

    24:56-25:42

That's his point here, is you can't do that. You get one shot. You get one time up to the plate. So what are you living for? Are you, are you using your one shot at life to chase after things that haven't made you happy and never will make you happy but you're going after them. Are you using your one shot at life to constantly complain and bellyache that everything isn't exactly how you like it? Your one shot at life or are you just using it to kill time? I cringe when I hear people say that. What are you doing? I'll just kill in time. They ain't making any more of that. What are you doing man? What are What are you doing?

    25:42-25:44

Are you racing to the finish line?

    25:47-25:48

With nothing to show for your life.

    25:53-25:57

See that's what Solomon's driving at, is the purpose to life must be sought now.

    25:57-26:04

And Solomon has showed us over and over and over, purpose only comes from knowing the living God.

    26:05-26:10

That's the only thing that gives meaning and satisfaction and significance to your life.

    26:11-27:05

God. So you need to say it in a sentence. What specific things have you done? Let's just take the past week, okay? Just look at the last week of your life. What specific things have you done to go after that? Knowing God. What have you done? And listen, intentions don't count. Like, well I meant to pray, and I meant to I meant to go to small group, and I meant... intentions don't count. What can you point to in your life that says, "Here is where I'm seeking to know God. Here's what I'm doing to grow in my relationship." Or, "Are you putting God off?" Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear what you're saying, Jeff. Someday, someday I'm going to stop this sin that I'm doing. Someday I'm gonna do that. Someday, you know what, someday, Jeff, I'm I'm gonna really start praying.

    27:05-27:07

And I've just been kind of saying my prayers lately.

    27:07-27:09

Someday I'm really gonna get serious about prayer.

    27:10-27:12

Someday I'm really gonna get serious about reading the Bible.

    27:13-27:15

Someday I'm really gonna get serious about seeking God.

    27:16-27:17

Well, I got awesome news for you.

    27:17-27:18

    Today is someday.

    27:21-27:31

I heard somebody say one time that you need to live the kind of life now that you wanna be able to tell God that you lived when you stand before him someday.

    27:34-27:36

    You only get one shot.

    27:37-27:45

And everything will change for you when you learn to truly embrace, daily embrace this truth.

    27:47-27:49

I only get one shot at life.

    27:49-27:50

    Say that again with me.

    27:50-27:50

    Ready?

    27:50-27:52

I'm going to give you a chance, hang on.

    27:55-27:56

Because I'm only going to give you one shot at this.

    27:58-28:00

See that's what you call an illustration.

    28:01-28:03

I only get one shot at life.

    28:04-28:06

I only get one shot at life.

    28:07-28:08

    Take it.

    28:09-28:09

    Take it.

    28:11-28:13

Okay, three things I know for certain that allow me to enjoy life.

    28:15-28:18

The first thing I know for certain is that I can't know everything God is doing.

    28:19-28:20

    I'll be okay with that.

    28:21-28:24

Second thing is I only get one shot at life on earth, finally.

    28:26-28:28

This is going to be the hardest sell in the church.

    28:30-28:31

    But we're going after it.

    28:32-28:33

    I have God's approval.

    28:36-28:37

I'm going to give you a chance to say that.

    28:37-28:39

And then we're going to see what the text says.

    28:39-28:43

So, as sort of a deposit by faith, I want you to say it.

    28:43-28:45

    I have God's approval.

    28:46-28:46

    Say it.

    28:47-28:48

    I have God's approval.

    28:50-28:56

These last few verses that we're looking at today, it's a familiar refrain in Ecclesiastes.

    28:56-29:00

He keeps coming back to this, but there's a statement that he uses here.

    29:00-29:03

A very profound phrase is added.

    29:03-29:04

    Look at verse seven.

    29:06-29:07

    Look at this.

    29:08-29:08

    Go.

    29:10-29:14

Because of all the stuff he just said, this is the charge now, this is the command.

    29:14-29:23

He goes, "Go, eat your bread with joy "and drink your wine with a merry heart, "for God has already approved what you do." Stop.

    29:26-29:29

    Listen, God has already approved.

    29:31-29:41

In one sense this is looking forward to the provision of the new covenant, but in another sense you could say it's always been by faith, right?

    29:41-29:44

Abraham believed God and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

    29:46-29:56

Listen, church, when you turn from your sin, and you receive Jesus Christ's faith, a whole lot of things happen there.

    29:57-29:59

The Bible says you're born again.

    29:59-30:04

The Bible says God's Spirit comes and indwells you, and lives in you, and through you.

    30:04-30:06

You have the promise of heaven.

    30:06-30:16

But there's something that happens when you receive Jesus Christ that a lot of Christians just don't really believe or embrace, but it's absolutely true, and it's this.

    30:18-30:22

When you receive Christ, God pronounces you righteous.

    30:23-30:40

He says, "You are perfect. You are holy. You have the righteousness of Christ." And trust me, as a pastor for the last 20-some-odd years, I just know too many Christians don't believe this.

    30:41-30:45

Listen, God has already given you His approval.

    30:49-30:51

What do you mean by that?

    30:54-30:55

    I mean this.

    30:57-30:59

You don't have to try to please God.

    31:01-31:03

You don't have to try to earn God's favor.

    31:04-31:09

There is nothing that you can do that's going to make God happy with you.

    31:12-31:18

You don't have to earn it because, like Mark had said earlier, it's not performance-based.

    31:20-31:25

And I've shared this with you before, but so much of our lives is performance-based.

    31:25-31:30

I got to, you know, I got to make my, I got to do well in school so my teacher's happy.

    31:30-31:33

I got to do well at work so my boss is happy. I got to do well at home so my wife is happy.

    31:33-31:42

I gotta do well, you know, so my parents are happy and so much of our lives, it's performance based and we carry that over to God.

    31:43-31:50

And say, "I gotta be a good little Christian so God's happy with me." And it's not performance based.

    31:53-31:57

You have His approval because of what Jesus Christ has done on your behalf.

    32:00-32:01

Let me put it in human terms.

    32:04-32:09

If I can get really personal here.

    32:11-32:14

I never felt like I had my mother's approval.

    32:15-32:15

    Ever.

    32:18-32:30

I never heard, "I'm proud of you." I never heard, "I'm so glad you're my son." I never heard, "Hey, I listened to your sermon online and I really enjoy that." I never heard that.

    32:31-32:32

I just never felt the approval.

    32:35-32:45

And you know, parents, parents, we do not have to parent the way that we were parented.

    32:48-32:50

And I want it different for my kids.

    32:51-32:53

Like my son, Cade, who's sitting back there.

    32:55-32:56

I tell him this all the time.

    32:57-32:58

    You have my approval.

    33:00-33:04

You wanna shave your head, you wanna have long hair, you have my approval.

    33:05-33:08

You wanna play guitar, you have my approval.

    33:10-33:12

You wanna play hockey, you have my approval.

    33:13-33:15

Someday soon he's gonna be getting a job.

    33:15-33:16

    He knows this.

    33:16-33:24

If you wanna work for Walmart or the sanitation department or be a doctor or a lawyer or whatever, you have my approval.

    33:27-33:39

I love him. He is my son and nothing is going to change that. And I tell him all the time, he'll tell you, I say, "Cade, I love you the same on your best day and on your worst day.

    33:40-34:18

Your performance doesn't change the way I feel about you because you're my son and I love you." Now listen, I want to help him do the right thing and yes, sometimes he messes up because we all mess up and we deal with it and we correct it and we move on but even through that that doesn't change how I feel about it you see and it's the same with God when you receive Jesus Christ the Bible says you become a child of God and yes God corrects us when we're in sin but we never lose his approval as His children.

    34:20-34:22

You've got to get that through your heads.

    34:24-34:29

If you're walking around saying, "God..." I'm speaking to Christians now.

    34:30-34:38

But if you're walking around saying, "God, You must be so disappointed in me." He's not.

    34:41-34:42

    Because you have His approval.

    34:45-34:46

    to Jesus Christ.

    34:48-34:54

And if he's walking around saying, "Oh, I messed up so bad, God must be so angry with me!" He's not.

    34:57-34:58

    Because of Jesus Christ.

    34:58-35:00

Do you understand what Jesus did on the cross?

    35:01-35:17

It wasn't just "Die this martyr's death." He was bearing the wrath of God for my sin, and for your sin, so when God punished His Son, He's not going to turn around and say, "I'm still mad about sin!" And punish somebody who receives Jesus.

    35:18-35:19

    The punishment's been dealt out.

    35:20-35:21

    He's not angry with you.

    35:22-35:23

    He's not disappointed with you.

    35:23-35:28

If you are in Christ, you're His child, and you have His approval.

    35:31-35:38

So listen, we don't live under the fear of a God who can't wait to punish us for messing up.

    35:39-35:46

We live under the love of a God who, thanks to Jesus Christ, has given us His approval.

    35:49-35:54

You're like, "So, what do I do with that?" Look at verse 8.

    35:56-35:59

He says, "Let your garments be always white.

    36:00-36:10

Let not oil be lacking on your head." Those were just things that they did in that hot climate to stay comfortable.

    36:10-36:11

    That's all he's talking about.

    36:11-36:20

I know some people try to spiritualize this to say, "Well, the garments are talking about, "you know, positional righteousness in Jesus Christ, "the oil is a picture of the Holy Spirit." I don't think so.

    36:21-36:26

You're gonna see from the rest of the context, I think he's talking about very practical everyday things.

    36:26-36:31

I think what he's saying is, so be comfortable.

    36:34-36:38

You have God's approval, so enjoy your life.

    36:39-36:39

    Be comfortable.

    36:40-36:47

If we were writing this in our day, we would say something like, "So, put on your crocks.

    36:49-36:50

    You get that perm.

    36:53-36:54

    Whatever floats your boat.

    36:56-36:56

    Be comfortable.

    36:57-36:59

Enjoy your life because you have God's approval.

    37:01-37:06

Enjoy the things that God has ordained for you." Like what?

    37:07-37:08

    Here's a couple, verses nine and 10.

    37:09-37:17

He says, "Enjoy life with the wife whom you love, all the days of your vain life that He has given you under the sun, because that is your portion in life.

    37:19-37:25

And in your toil, in which you toil under the sun, whatever your hand finds you to do, do it with all your might.

    37:26-37:35

For there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom and Sheol to which you are going." Sheol just means the grave.

    37:35-37:42

They didn't have all of the revelation that we have living on this side of history, this side of Jesus Christ, this side of the new covenant.

    37:42-37:50

So the Old Testament mindset was you die and you go to the grave, shiel, the place of the dead.

    37:51-37:53

That's all that means, it's just the grave.

    37:55-38:00

So he says, "Hey, if you're married, enjoy that.

    38:02-38:07

You have a job, go for it, man, hard as you can.

    38:08-38:09

    Enjoy your life.

    38:12-38:15

This might sound like a radical concept, but this is exactly what he's talking about.

    38:16-38:19

God wants you to enjoy the things that He's given you.

    38:20-38:22

That's not a hard concept, is it?

    38:22-38:24

He wants you to enjoy the things He's given you?

    38:26-38:52

How would you feel, parents with kids, how would you feel if you spent all your money and you booked the most perfect vacation in Disney World and you're, you know, you take little Jimmy and little Betsy or whatever, you're at Disney World, and you bought the tickets and you got the fast pass and they're wearing the little mouse ears and you look down and you're like, all this for you, what do you think?

    38:53-38:54

    And they're like, boring.

    38:57-38:58

    How would you feel?

    38:58-39:01

You're like, I did all of this for you to enjoy.

    39:03-39:05

And you see, you gotta think in the same way.

    39:05-39:14

Look, God is saying, "I've given you food, and drink, and comfort, and this spouse, and your job.

    39:15-39:17

    Why are you so miserable?

    39:17-39:19

Look at all this stuff that I gave you.

    39:19-39:25

Enjoy this." God meant for life to be enjoyed.

    39:26-39:37

And there's something so, there's so, we're like so tightly wound as Christians sometimes, even saying that, there's somebody, right now, I guarantee you there's somebody that's blasphemy check.

    39:39-39:40

God wants me to enjoy life.

    39:41-39:43

    That doesn't sound right, Jeff.

    39:43-39:45

I don't think God wants me to enjoy life.

    39:45-39:45

    He does!

    39:46-39:47

    He says he does.

    39:47-39:51

He's given you everything to enjoy life, so enjoy it.

    39:54-40:04

And there are so many things that we could focus on that would make us lose sight of the fact that God wants you to enjoy life.

    40:06-40:08

So here's three things to remind yourself.

    40:10-40:11

Truths to take to the bank.

    40:13-40:15

Things will maximize your time here on the earth.

    40:17-40:20

I wanna give you a challenge this week, all right?

    40:21-40:22

Here's what I want you to do.

    40:24-40:27

These three truths, now you got your sermon outline thing here, right?

    40:29-40:30

    You got your sermon outline?

    40:31-40:32

    You filled it out?

    40:32-40:33

    All right.

    40:33-40:34

Here's what I want you to do.

    40:34-40:36

I want you to keep this handy this week.

    40:36-40:39

Keep stick it in your Bible, stick it in your pocket.

    40:39-40:40

I don't care, but keep this thing handy.

    40:41-40:43

And here's the challenge that I want you to do this week.

    40:43-40:48

This week, I want you to pray these three truths back to God first thing every morning.

    40:49-40:53

Before you do anything, I want you to pull this paper out.

    40:53-40:53

    Mine's not filled in.

    40:53-40:55

    I got this one.

    40:55-41:00

But you need to pull this paper out and pray these things back to God.

    41:03-41:12

To say, God, I'm about to start my day today, and God, I'm reminded from your word that I'm not going to know and understand everything that you're doing today, and I'm okay with that.

    41:13-41:15

Let me follow you and trust you no matter what.

    41:15-41:17

Can you pray something like that back to God?

    41:18-41:24

And then say, God, I'm about to start my day, and I realize I only have one shot at life on earth, and I wanna make it count.

    41:27-41:31

I want today to be about seeking You and finding Your purpose in life.

    41:34-41:43

And the last glorious thing I want you to pray back to God is to say, "God, I thank You that I'm moving forward today already having Your approval.

    41:44-41:50

God, thank You that there's nothing I have to do today to earn Your love, earn Your favor.

    41:50-41:54

There's no performing that I have to do to make You happy with me, God.

    41:54-41:58

I thank You that because of Jesus Christ, I already have your approval.

    42:01-42:02

So I'm moving forward in victory.

    42:04-42:08

I'm moving forward today as a child of God.

    42:10-42:11

I want you to bow your heads and pray with me, please.

    42:14-42:15

    That's your challenge this week.

    42:16-42:17

    Pray these three things.

    42:17-42:20

    First thing, every morning.

    42:22-42:28

And I want you to see how it's going to change your entire attitude and outlook on your life.

    42:28-42:30

Can you do that? Can you try that?

    42:30-42:31

    Let's pray.

    42:33-42:36

Father, we just want to bow before You and we thank You for Your Word.

    42:39-42:49

And we thank You, Father, as Solomon's walking us through, trying to understand the meaning of life, that we have these three glorious truths to hold on to.

    42:49-42:54

And Father, these are three things that I think so many people in the church they have completely forgotten.

    42:56-43:07

We try to have the right systematic theology and subscribe to the right preacher, and we think we know everything that you're doing, but even Moses said there's secret things that belong to you.

    43:09-43:14

Father, we think that things are going to go on forever.

    43:14-43:16

There's always time to go back and fix things.

    43:17-43:20

And Solomon reminds us, we only get one shot at this.

    43:22-43:34

Father, we thank you for the glorious ministry of Jesus Christ that brings us the very righteousness of God and therefore your approval, just as Solomon says here.

    43:36-43:50

So Father, I just pray today for this church, that these truths would be manifest in our lives in a way that the world sees this is the difference that Jesus Christ makes in a person's life.

    43:51-43:55

Let that be our witness to open the door, Father, to share Your Word.

    43:57-44:05

As we experience Your goodness, perhaps like never before, we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Open your Bibles with me please to the book of Ecclesiastes in chapter 8.

    00:58-01:05

The title of today's message is "Can I trust the government?" [audience member] Woo!

    01:07-01:07

    [laughter]

    01:08-01:11

Hang on a second. Have I preached this one before?

    01:14-01:15

Because you got way ahead of me.

    01:16-01:19

All right, yeah, I guess that's it, right?

    01:20-01:21

You're loved, I'll see you next week.

    01:26-01:28

Not always that easy, is it?

    01:30-01:34

Nothing controversial to talk about today, just politics.

    01:36-01:40

I really messed this up because I wanted Pastor Taylor to preach this message.

    01:41-01:43

    This one is all yours.

    01:46-01:53

But at Harvest Bible Chapel, Bible is our middle name, and we go where the text goes.

    01:55-01:55

    So here we go.

    01:57-02:16

Let's talk about the government, let's talk about politics, because it's the source of some of the most emotionally charged and divisive issues, even for Christian - no, especially for Christians, right?

    02:17-02:33

We are all over the place when it comes to politics. Like, you know, we can talk about...let's talk about voting. You know, every time it comes up, it's, "What do we do? What do we do? Do we vote for the lesser of two evils? Is it right to vote for somebody if they're evil at all? What about this guy?

    02:34-02:44

He belongs to this party that nobody's ever heard of, but his beliefs kind of align with mine. He doesn't have a chance. Do I just waste my vote on him and Does voting even really matter?

    02:48-02:50

    What about laws regarding abortion?

    02:52-02:58

You're like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, you heard that Roe v. Wade was overturned, right?" I'm like, "You really think that's the end of it?

    02:58-02:58

    Really?

    02:59-03:00

    Come on.

    03:01-03:12

I was born on a Tuesday, but it wasn't last Tuesday." You know, and all these legal talks about who should go into which bathroom, and we got the war in Ukraine, and the United States involvement with that.

    03:12-03:18

And then we got inflation and we got COVID mandates and we got, how about this one?

    03:20-03:22

    This student loan forgiveness thing.

    03:24-03:26

How are we feeling about that, ladies and gentlemen?

    03:29-03:36

You know, I worked like four or five jobs in college, including pastoring a church.

    03:37-03:44

and I had to take some loans, which I paid off, and now I have the pleasure of paying off other people's?

    03:47-03:48

    I'm not bitter at all.

    03:49-03:51

(audience laughing) I'm not bitter at all.

    03:52-03:53

Thanks for pointing that out, Jay.

    03:54-03:55

    (audience laughing)

    03:57-03:59

I could go on, but I'm not going to.

    04:00-04:10

But the point is this, all of these issues regarding politics and government and leadership and authority, it has consumed us.

    04:12-04:20

And for some people, it's all day on Fox News, and other people, it's all day on CNN, and other people, it's all day on Twitter.

    04:21-04:32

And I have literally watched very close friendships end, because somebody in the friendship believes something differently about politics.

    04:33-04:37

I can't believe you would support or vote for that guy, this friendship is over.

    04:38-04:38

    I've seen it.

    04:41-04:54

The question as we are consuming this stuff all week and then we come into worship and we turn to God's word, the question is, how do I live as a Christian in this culture?

    04:57-04:59

How can I obey wicked rulers?

    05:00-05:05

And I look at all this stuff happening in the government and I'm like, how can I be okay with this?

    05:06-05:08

    Well, we have options, right?

    05:08-05:09

    We have options.

    05:09-05:12

One option that a lot of people take is just despair.

    05:13-05:15

Some people, they just live in despair mode.

    05:16-05:25

And it's all over, and they're, "Oh, I can't believe it, and this guy in office now, or this guy voted in, and everything's so bad." It's just constant despair mode.

    05:25-05:26

    You have that option.

    05:29-05:33

Another option is to bury your head in the sand, right?

    05:33-05:34

I know people that are like, you know what?

    05:35-05:36

    I never watch the news.

    05:37-05:39

Like, hey, did you hear about the student loan thing?

    05:39-05:40

    Like, what student loan thing?

    05:40-05:42

    I never watch the news.

    05:42-05:43

You don't watch the news at all?

    05:43-05:46

Nope, it's too depressing, it's too stressful.

    05:46-05:47

    I don't watch the news.

    05:48-05:51

You have that option, I suppose.

    05:52-05:55

And some people go the complete other end, don't they?

    05:56-05:58

    Viva la revolucion, right?

    06:00-06:05

And we're gonna fight, we're gonna rise up, We're gonna burn it down.

    06:08-06:57

It's gonna be like another revolution man. What if I told you that the right answer in response to government and all of this stuff, what if I told you the right answer is none of the above? Like you're gonna have to sell me on that and like well that's why I'm here today. So on your outline, look, I'm not going to persuade you to any political party or candidate or ideal or philosophy. There's one goal I have today and if you'll tune in with me for a few minutes, you will leave saying, you know what, even though I don't like what's going on, I'm okay with this. So on your outline, very simply, how how to be okay with the government.

    06:59-07:15

There are going to be people leaving here and there are going to be people after this stream is over, turning it off, and there's going to be a huge weight lifted off of you because you're going to be able to say, you know what, nothing's changed in the government, but I've changed and I'm okay with what's happening.

    07:16-07:17

    You ready?

    07:17-07:18

Here's how to be okay with the government.

    07:19-07:20

Step one, you're gonna change your theology.

    07:22-07:23

    You gotta change your theology.

    07:23-07:24

    Look at verse two.

    07:27-07:41

Solomon says, "I say, keep the king's command because of God's oath to him." Now this whole chunk is very hard Hebrew to translate and interpret.

    07:42-07:55

Some of your Bibles, instead of saying, "keep the king's command because of God's oath to him," some of your Bibles might say, "keep the king's command for the sake of your oath And you're like, which is it?

    07:56-07:56

    Which is it?

    07:56-07:56

    Which is it?

    07:56-07:57

    It doesn't matter.

    07:57-08:03

In either case, Solomon's saying, you need to obey the king because of God, right?

    08:04-08:06

You need to obey the king because of God.

    08:07-08:16

And the implication of him even telling us this command is that sometimes it's not always pleasant to obey, right?

    08:16-08:17

That's why he's bringing it up.

    08:18-08:21

Sometimes it's not always pleasant to obey the government.

    08:23-08:33

Right? Like jury duty, or zoning regulations, or, oh, I don't know, paying your taxes.

    08:35-08:40

It's not always pleasant or easy to obey.

    08:41-08:52

So before we look at everything else he's telling us, I want to give you very, very quickly a basic theology of government, because some of you need to change your theology.

    08:53-08:55

Here's a basic theology of government.

    08:57-08:58

    Write these three things down.

    08:59-09:01

This is all under number one, change your theology.

    09:01-09:04

Basic theology of government, letter A, government is established by God.

    09:06-09:08

    Government is established by God.

    09:10-09:13

New Testament, it's a parallel passage.

    09:13-09:16

Paul teaches the same stuff that Solomon teaches here.

    09:17-09:28

But he says, Romans 13, one, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

    09:29-09:30

    So whose idea was government?

    09:33-09:38

Some of you said that very reluctantly, but look, God is not ashamed of what he said.

    09:38-09:40

We are not ashamed of what God said.

    09:40-09:42

So I'm gonna give you another run at that 'cause he's listening.

    09:45-09:46

    Who established government?

    09:48-09:48

    God did.

    09:49-09:50

    God established government.

    09:51-09:52

    That was his idea.

    09:52-09:53

    You're like, why?

    09:53-09:58

Well, letter B, government is established by God to deter sin.

    09:59-10:01

Listen, this is the purpose of government.

    10:03-10:05

Government is to be a sin deterrent.

    10:07-10:07

    Why?

    10:08-10:17

Because God knows if there was no government, if there was no penalty for doing something wrong, what kind of a culture would we live in?

    10:20-10:21

"You have something that I want?

    10:21-10:29

I will shoot you and take it." And then the next guy, he sees what I now have and he wants it, he will shoot me and he will take it.

    10:29-10:29

    Why?

    10:32-10:33

    Because what are the repercussions?

    10:35-10:41

What's stopping me from stealing or killing or lying or cheating or driving my car anywhere I want it?

    10:43-10:55

The government is meant to deter sin, and God knew that, and God established government because He knew without that, this world would be just nothing but a dumpster fire all the time.

    10:56-11:01

And by the way, do you know the first law God instituted that man was to enforce upon man?

    11:02-11:02

Do you know what it was?

    11:03-11:04

    It was the death penalty.

    11:05-11:07

    Was it Genesis 9.6?

    11:08-11:09

    You can look that up.

    11:09-11:12

That was the first man-to-man, man-enforced law.

    11:13-11:16

If somebody kills someone, you are to take their life.

    11:18-11:20

That was the first law that God established we are to enforce on each other.

    11:21-11:21

    Letter C.

    11:24-11:25

You've got to change your theology, man.

    11:26-11:29

Listen, Letter C. Proper submission to authority is an act of faith.

    11:32-11:36

I want you to hear Solomon out here as we go through the text.

    11:37-11:38

We have to lay the groundwork here.

    11:38-12:04

submission to authority is an act of faith. In other words, trusting God's authority is trusting God's providence. And you're like, "Hang on, you just said at the beginning, Pastor Jeff, and I'd like to remind you that the government is corrupt." And I would say, "You mean like Egypt was in the days of Moses?

    12:06-12:09

Do you mean like Babylon in the days of Daniel?

    12:10-12:10

    Like that?

    12:11-12:13

    Do you mean like Rome?

    12:14-12:17

You know, Herod and Pilate, you know, under the days of Jesus?

    12:20-12:22

Or do you mean like Rome in the days of Paul?

    12:24-12:25

    I could go on.

    12:26-12:29

But you see, corruption in government is nothing new.

    12:30-12:41

I have to ask you, with Moses and Daniel and Jesus and Paul, was God at work in these cases in spite of, or maybe even through, a corrupt government?

    12:44-12:45

    He was.

    12:47-12:54

Proverbs 21.1 says this, "The king's heart is a stream of water "in the hand of the Lord.

    12:54-13:06

"He turns it wherever he will." That verse says a lot, but the main point is this, that even under a corrupt government, God is sovereign, and we still have to believe that, and we still have to trust Him.

    13:10-13:19

You see, our submitting to the government, it's not about the worthiness of the government, it's about our trust in God.

    13:23-13:24

    Don't leave.

    13:25-13:26

    Look at verse three.

    13:28-13:31

He says, "Do not be hasty to go from his presence.

    13:32-13:47

Do not take your stand in an evil cause, for he does whatever he pleases." Okay, that first phrase, when he says, "Do not be hasty to go from his presence," that's a Hebrew figure of speech.

    13:47-13:48

    It's about disloyalty.

    13:49-14:00

It's like, you know, picturing like the king giving a decree or a law, and you just turn around and walk away like, "Heh heh heh, enough for me." You're showing disloyalty towards the government.

    14:01-14:03

    That's the picture there.

    14:03-14:07

And then he says, "Don't take your stand on an evil cause." That's pretty obvious, right?

    14:08-14:11

Don't persist in breaking the law.

    14:14-14:15

    Right?

    14:17-14:24

So when the government is in the wrong, which has happened on occasion, it's easy.

    14:25-14:33

It's easy to turn away, but it's also super easy to get vocal against the government, right?

    14:33-16:14

And that's exactly who Solomon addresses in verse four, when he says, "For the word of the King is supreme, and who may say to him, 'What are you doing?'" So look, we are clearly called be submissive to the government. We are clearly called to obey the government. But here's the question. What do we do when we can't? Now look at verses 5 through 7. This is so important. He says, "Whoever keeps a command will know no evil thing, and the wise heart will know the proper time and the just way. For there is a time and a way for everything, although man's trouble lies heavy on him. For he does not know what it is to be, for who can tell him how it will be?" You see, he's calling for wisdom here. And the truth is, when it comes to government, a wise person wants to obey. You see, if you're sitting government says, "I'm not doing it. I'm doing whatever I want to do." That's not wise at all. But sometimes, as Solomon points out here, it's not always easy to know how and when to obey when the government is wicked. See, I think that's what he's talking about in verse 6 when he talks about man's trouble lies heavy on him.

    16:17-16:20

I mean, if obedience was "Yeah, no problem.

    16:20-16:34

Just tell me what to do and I'll do it." But sometimes the trouble's heavy on us because maybe obedience to the government wouldn't be a right thing in God's eyes.

    16:38-16:39

    So what do we do?

    16:40-16:40

    What do we do?

    16:43-17:02

Well, you know, Jesus said, Matthew 10, verse 16, one of my favorite verses, he said to his disciples, "Behold, I'm sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves." Now stop there for a second.

    17:02-17:03

    I wish that was opposite.

    17:04-17:16

I wish Jesus huddled the disciples together, like, "Listen up, boys, you are wolves, and you are heading out in the sheep, "and you are going to mow them down.

    17:17-17:20

"So stay hungry, boys." That's what I wish he said.

    17:21-17:22

    That's not what he said.

    17:22-17:33

He said, "We are the sheep, "and we are in the midst of wolves." So obviously he's saying you're vulnerable to attack, right, that's what he's saying.

    17:34-17:37

But look what he says next, using the animal metaphors.

    17:38-17:55

He says, "So be wise as serpents and innocent as doves." You're like, "Well, why is that so significant?" Because if you keep reading, the context is very clearly about how to deal with government.

    17:56-17:59

He says, "The government's going to come after Jesus' people.

    17:59-18:00

    They're going to hate you.

    18:00-18:11

You're going to be dragged before kings and rulers." The context is obeying a wicked government or being brought before a government that's persecuting Jesus' people.

    18:11-18:21

"So what do we do, Jesus?" He said, "You've got to be innocent, but you've got to be wise at the same time." And I think that's exactly what Solomon is saying here.

    18:23-18:25

You've got to be innocent, but you've got to be wise.

    18:28-18:34

Being a flagrant rebel is not innocent because you're disobeying God's command to submit to the government.

    18:35-19:39

But, just going along with the wickedness of the government because "I don't know what to do, that's not wise. So the question that we as Christians have to constantly be wrestling with in the face of a wicked government is, "How can I be innocent and wise at the same time?" Let me give you an example. As I said, you haven't heard the end of abortion. You happening right now actually but there's going to be more laws and legal discussion and you have options you could burn down abortion clinics which I do not recommend you can spend every resource on trying to get laws passed to make abortion illegal and I don't recommend that either because neither Either one of those options are gonna get you anywhere.

    19:40-19:41

    Really.

    19:44-19:48

Like, well then how do you, how can you be like a serpent and a dove in this situation?

    19:48-19:50

Do you know who figured that out?

    19:51-19:53

    Places like Choices Pregnancy Services.

    19:54-19:55

    They figured that out.

    19:56-20:01

Because here you have an organization that says, oh, you wanna make laws protecting abortion.

    20:01-20:02

    You know what we'll do?

    20:02-20:06

We'll go after the hearts of those considering abortion.

    20:06-20:08

    We'll offer free pregnancy tests.

    20:08-20:13

We'll offer ultrasounds, which very often makes a mother change her mind about getting the abortion.

    20:17-20:24

You see places like choices, no laws are broken, but they're fighting the real issue head on.

    20:25-20:26

    You see that?

    20:26-20:28

They're innocent and wise at the same time.

    20:31-20:38

So if you're all fussed up about the government, you gotta change your theology, all right?

    20:39-20:41

Just take a step back and say, you know what?

    20:41-20:45

This whole idea of government, it was God's idea.

    20:47-20:54

And I understand, no matter how corrupt, I understand why God instituted government.

    20:54-20:55

    So change your theology.

    20:56-20:57

    Number two, change your perspective.

    21:00-21:01

    You gotta change your perspective.

    21:02-21:08

Like, yeah, I hear what you're saying, Pastor Jeff, The government is so corrupt, and it's not getting any better, have you noticed?

    21:09-21:11

It's just getting worse and worse and worse.

    21:11-21:12

It's just not getting any better.

    21:13-21:14

    I'm like, "That's okay.

    21:15-21:20

I'm not going to be around here forever." Neither are you.

    21:21-21:22

    Look at verse 8.

    21:24-21:29

He says, "No man has the power to retain the Spirit or power over the day of death.

    21:30-21:39

There is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it." In other words, the government isn't the ultimate authority.

    21:40-21:42

The government doesn't have the final word.

    21:43-21:45

    They don't control everything.

    21:45-21:53

And so often as we've seen in Ecclesiastes, Solomon, he's searching for the meaning of life and he has to necessarily talk about death.

    21:53-21:55

And he's coming back to that again.

    21:57-22:03

And here in this context, he's showing us who still ultimately holds the authority.

    22:04-22:05

    Like yeah, government is powerful.

    22:07-22:08

    They don't control everything.

    22:10-22:11

You got to change your perspective.

    22:11-22:14

You got to take a step back and you got to look at the big picture.

    22:15-22:20

This is how things are now, but this is not how things will always be.

    22:20-22:57

And as Solomon points out, their wickedness isn't going to save them and it's not going to prolong their lives indefinitely either. So I can just say, "You know what? I'm okay with government because it's temporary. Because I'm temporary. But I'm permanently a citizen of heaven. And if you change your perspective, you look at the long view, you can say, "Hey, you know what?

    22:59-23:01

I can be okay with the government.

    23:03-23:10

I'll be okay with the government." Change your theology, change your perspective. Number three, you've got to change your expectations.

    23:12-23:27

You've got to change your expectations. And somebody at this point in the sermon is like, I hear what you're saying, Pastor Jeff, but look, as a believer in Jesus Christ and seeing all of this corruption in the government, you're telling me I have to be okay with that.

    23:27-23:29

How can I be okay with that?

    23:31-23:32

You have to change your expectations.

    23:33-23:34

    Look at verse 9.

    23:36-23:53

He says, "All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun when man has power over man to his hurt." You might be shocked to hear this, but oftentimes people in authority abuse their power.

    23:56-24:12

In studying for this rather, I was trying to understand some things about government and the application of wickedness and those things, and I found a really helpful thing here that helped me really keep things straight in my own head.

    24:12-24:12

    Maybe this will help you.

    24:13-24:22

But there was explained, you know, under capitalism, man exploits man.

    24:24-24:29

But under communism, that's like reverse, man.

    24:30-24:31

    You see?

    24:32-24:32

    (congregation laughing)

    24:33-24:33

    Doesn't that make sense?

    24:35-24:36

    I know, right?

    24:36-24:36

    It's profound.

    24:40-24:42

The point is this, all governments do evil.

    24:44-24:45

Like, well where does the evil come from?

    24:48-24:50

Well, government itself is not evil.

    24:50-24:52

We already said that's from God.

    24:53-24:55

Evil comes from fallen man within government.

    24:58-25:01

As we remind ourselves often here, hey, hey, hey, hey.

    25:02-25:08

People who don't know Jesus act like people who don't know Jesus.

    25:10-25:14

are gonna act like sinners, right?

    25:16-25:21

So, what should we expect when sinful people run the government?

    25:25-25:26

    Solomon delves into that.

    25:26-25:28

He gives us some examples, right?

    25:28-25:28

    Look at verse 10.

    25:29-25:33

He says, here's some examples of wickedness, injustice.

    25:34-25:36

He says, "Then I saw the wicked buried.

    25:37-25:42

They used to go in and out of the holy place and were praised in the city where they had done such things.

    25:42-25:43

    This also is vanity.

    25:45-25:45

    All right?

    25:45-25:53

And I think in the context here, he has in mind some politician or something, but he's like, here's this funeral of a guy.

    25:53-25:55

    Everybody knew he was wicked.

    25:55-25:58

Like everybody knew he was, but he looked so holy when he went to church.

    25:58-26:00

I'm heading to the temple, I'm going to worship.

    26:00-26:04

Oh, he was so holy and righteous, but everybody knew what a dirtbag he was.

    26:04-26:16

And then he was praised at his funeral because nothing shines a halo like a funeral and everybody was praising the man up and down and I'm standing there going, that guy was garbage and now we're praising him.

    26:17-26:19

And he says, you got to expect such vanity.

    26:22-26:23

    And another one, verse 11.

    26:24-26:33

He says, here's another example of injustice, immorality as it pertains to the government because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily.

    26:34-26:36

the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.

    26:38-26:42

Delays in justice encourage criminals to keep doing their thing.

    26:44-26:46

    Technicalities release criminals.

    26:47-26:54

People are in jail awaiting trial for years after their crime is committed.

    26:55-26:59

And Solomon says that's a problem because it encourages more sin, right?

    26:59-27:00

    Think about it.

    27:01-27:21

If somebody murders someone, for example, and he's apprehended, and that day, he's immediately found guilty, 100%, no doubt, this man committed the crime, and they took him out that night and shot him on national TV, what do you think that's gonna communicate to other people that are thinking about harming someone?

    27:23-27:25

There would be so much less crime.

    27:27-27:38

But that doesn't happen, because what we do is we take that guy and we put him in jail and we talk a whole lot about him for a few days, then we kind of forget about him.

    27:40-27:50

So the person that might be thinking of doing a similar crime, maybe, oh, maybe I shouldn't because of what happened to this guy, but now nobody's talking about him, must not be that bad.

    27:52-27:56

It shows us that evil is present in the government and you can expect such vanity.

    27:59-28:03

So you're like, well, might as well be wicked then.

    28:03-28:04

    I mean, why not?

    28:04-28:04

    Why not?

    28:07-28:08

    I'll tell you why not.

    28:08-28:08

    Look at verse 12.

    28:11-28:31

"Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God because they fear before him." Oh, here it is, verse 13.

    28:31-28:56

"But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God." In other words, for the guy that's still considering, you know what, I might as well just do whatever the heck I wanna do, because people get away with it, and the government stinks, and nobody cares.

    28:56-28:58

Solomon's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, that might be true, but God's watching.

    28:59-29:10

Remember him? God's still watching. And you know what? You might get away with something once, or in Solomon's hypothetical here, you might get away with it a hundred times.

    29:13-29:17

And you're not gonna face God's judgment today.

    29:21-29:25

But it's coming. Right? You already talked about that in verse 8. It's coming.

    29:27-29:43

Verse 14, he says, "There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous." I said that this also is vanity.

    29:44-29:47

So much in life things seem backwards, don't they?

    29:50-29:57

You know, the sinner gets the promotion, gets the big bonus, gets everything seemingly handed to them.

    30:00-30:02

And the righteous, what do they get?

    30:03-30:08

The bad medical diagnosis, the car breaking down.

    30:11-30:15

You know, some of the best people I've ever known have had the worst things happen to them.

    30:17-30:24

And some of the worst people I've ever known seem to just flit through life carefree.

    30:27-30:40

And Solomon says, "You can expect such vanity." Oh, by the way, this is the gospel.

    30:42-30:42

    Did you notice that?

    30:44-30:45

Do you know what the gospel is?

    30:45-30:53

Jesus Christ, the only righteous person to ever live, was treated like the wicked.

    30:56-31:00

When He was on that cross, He took our sin on Himself.

    31:02-31:07

And He was facing God's judgment as if He was wicked, even though He was righteous.

    31:09-31:11

And what was the result of the cross?

    31:13-31:18

was so that God could treat the wicked like we were righteous.

    31:19-31:20

That's what happened on the cross.

    31:23-31:30

God treated the righteous like the wicked, so that He could treat the wicked like the righteous.

    31:33-31:40

But, regarding the government, I can just tell you this, church.

    31:42-31:51

I'm not going to spaz when I see corruption, and lying, and injustice, and immorality.

    31:53-31:59

I'm not going to spaz about that, and neither will you, if you change your expectations.

    32:01-32:04

    And finally, change your focus.

    32:05-32:06

    Change your focus.

    32:07-32:10

You've got to change your theology, you've got to change your perspective, you've got to change your expectations.

    32:10-32:12

Finally, you've got to change your focus.

    32:13-32:14

    Look at verse 15.

    32:15-32:20

It's like, what do you think about all this government and corruption and all of this, Solomon?

    32:20-32:21

    Here it is.

    32:21-32:30

He says, "And I commend joy." That Hebrew word for commend is the same Hebrew word for praise.

    32:31-32:37

He's just like, "Yeah, joy!" What do you mean, Solomon?

    32:37-33:00

He says, "For man has no good thing under the sun, but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go well with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun." He says, "There's nothing better than to eat, drink and be joyful." And you're like, "Man, that sounds awfully fatalistic." No, far from it.

    33:02-33:05

What God has given, that's been the theme throughout, right?

    33:05-33:06

He's been saying this over and over.

    33:07-33:11

The theme of Ecclesiastes is you need to enjoy life from the hand of God.

    33:11-33:16

Contentment and satisfaction, living this God-centered life.

    33:16-33:17

    That's what brings meaning.

    33:20-33:27

So in other words, Solomon's saying, "Yes, God ordained the government.

    33:27-33:31

Yes, the government's often wicked because wicked people are running it.

    33:32-33:44

life isn't always fair, but that does not stop you from eating and drinking and being joyful and living life from the hand of God.

    33:47-33:51

    Doesn't stop you. Here's what I mean.

    33:52-34:51

I remember living through, first of all, President Reagan. Now he's the first president I remember, okay I was a lot who was previous was that Ford okay I just Reagan was was Carter okay then Ford was before him see I don't remember because I was just a little baby but Reagan was the first president I remember right and then after Reagan was what Bush right and then Clinton and then Bush jr. Bush part to, electric boogaloo, whatever, the other George Bush, and then Obama, and then Trump, and now we have, hey listen, we can be okay with the government, easy, we can be okay with the government.

    34:54-34:55

    I will start over.

    34:56-34:56

    (audience laughing)

    34:58-35:02

Now, like I said, Reagan was the first president I remember, some of you go further back.

    35:03-35:05

And I'm not gonna ask for volunteers, don't shout it out.

    35:05-35:09

Some of you might have been alive during like, James K. Polk or whatever.

    35:10-35:10

    (audience laughing)

    35:12-35:15

Millard Fillmore was the first president I remember.

    35:18-35:20

    I'm just, I don't know, I'm just saying.

    35:21-35:22

    Here's my point.

    35:22-35:36

under every president and whoever's next, we always could, and we will always be able to enjoy life from the hand of God.

    35:38-35:41

It hasn't mattered who's been in the White House.

    35:42-35:45

That hasn't affected the thing that God is doing in my life through Jesus Christ.

    35:47-35:49

    The president can't stop that.

    35:52-36:01

Whoever's present, that can't affect my attitude towards my Christian walk and living life from the hand of God.

    36:01-36:14

People listen, you've got to change your focus because there are some people, and there are some people that are sitting here, or there are people that are watching this stream that are so wrapped up in politics, that's all they can focus on.

    36:15-36:33

And you see it in social media, both sides, all the memes, all the video links, all the, you know, check out this article about this politician and check out what this politician's son did, obsessively on this stuff all the time, constantly bashing the other party's candidate.

    36:34-36:42

And it's no wonder people are so anxious because they're just constantly in the midst of that, that storm that's going on.

    36:45-36:48

Whatever the scandal of the is, let me get on that.

    36:49-36:52

Let me censor schemes, let me, ah.

    36:53-36:55

Come on, man, you gotta change your focus.

    36:56-36:59

Take a step back and say, look, God is sovereign.

    37:01-37:04

And there is a much bigger picture.

    37:06-37:13

And sinners gonna act like sinners, but that doesn't, none of this has to affect the way that I live day by day.

    37:16-37:17

    Change your focus.

    37:20-37:22

Can we end this message on a high note?

    37:23-37:24

    Like a really high note?

    37:25-37:29

Because let's be honest, the Bible doesn't sugarcoat it, right?

    37:29-37:30

    The Bible doesn't ignore it.

    37:32-37:33

    The struggle's real.

    37:41-37:46

Someday, the government is going to be run by Jesus Christ.

    37:49-37:52

Isaiah 9.6, we spent like a whole Christmas on this one verse.

    37:53-37:59

It says, "For to us a child is born." It's a prophecy of the birth and ultimate ministry of Jesus, the Messiah, God in the flesh.

    37:59-38:06

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given." Look at what he says about him.

    38:06-38:13

And the government shall be upon his shoulder." Like, what in the world does that mean?

    38:15-38:16

He tells us in the next verse.

    38:18-38:22

He says, "Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end.

    38:24-38:42

On the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore." You're like, "Is God serious about this?" The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

    38:45-38:50

In the meantime, the government is going to be run by sinful people.

    38:52-38:53

    So what can we expect?

    38:53-38:59

In the meantime, we can still enjoy life from the hand of God.

    39:01-39:05

In the meantime, I can be okay with the government.

    39:06-39:06

    Let's pray.

    39:07-39:14

Father in heaven, we thank you for the honest assessment of things that your word gives us.

    39:17-39:21

Things don't always work out the way we think they should.

    39:24-39:28

But Father, I pray that we get to that place of trusting your sovereignty.

    39:30-39:32

It doesn't matter who's in the White House.

    39:36-39:41

It doesn't matter who the prime minister or leader or dictator or whatever in any country.

    39:42-39:43

    It doesn't matter.

    39:45-39:49

Because Jesus Christ is the sovereign one.

    39:49-40:03

And Father, we just cling to the glorious promise that someday we are going to be under a complete a completely corruption-free government.

    40:03-40:12

Because Jesus Christ is going to rightly have His place over this earth as Lord and King of all.

    40:14-40:26

In the meantime, as we enjoy life from Your hand, Father, let Jesus Christ be Lord and King over His citizens of heaven.

    40:27-40:38

Those of us who are called by His name, Father, those of us that have been born again, let us show the world what it's like to be citizens of heaven.

    40:41-40:42

    Glorify Your name, Father.

    40:43-40:56

Help us all collectively as a church to take a deep breath, to step away from the ledge, say I'm okay with what's going on in the government because I trust the sovereignty of my God.

    40:57-40:58

    In Jesus' name, Amen.

Finding Balance in an Unbalanced World

Introduction:

How Can I Live a Balanced Life:
(Ecclesiastes 7:15-8:1)

  1. By choosing to be Godly Instead of Unrighteous and Self-Righteous . (Eccl 7:15-20)

In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that - and, therefore, know yourself as nothing in comparison - you do not know God at all. As long as you are proud, you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.

- C.S. Lewis

  1. By choosing to be Wise Instead of Arrogant and Foolish . (Eccl 7:21-29)
  1. By choosing to Stand Out Instead of Blend In . (Eccl 8:1)

Isaiah 5:20 - "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter."

  • 00:49-00:53

All right, so you can open your Bibles to Ecclesiastes chapter 7.

    00:54-00:56

Now for those of you who know me, I've preached many times at this church.

    00:56-01:01

This is my first sermon as the associate pastor, so I'm not going to play it safe.

    01:01-01:03

I'm going to be a little bit dangerous.

    01:04-01:06

I'm going to pull someone out of the audience to help me with my opening illustration.

    01:07-01:10

I can hear stomachs churning. I can hear knees knocking.

    01:10-01:18

I can hear people thinking, "I knew I didn't like this guy. I knew something was off about him." You know what? I'm not going to pull someone out of the audience, but I will ask for a volunteer.

    01:18-01:20

Who would love to help me with my opening illustration?

    01:22-01:22

    Anybody?

    01:24-01:24

    Brian?

    01:25-01:25

    Brian, you wanna help me?

    01:26-01:26

    All right, man.

    01:27-01:28

Everyone give Brian a round of applause.

    01:31-01:33

Brian just asked if he's gonna regret it.

    01:33-01:33

    You might.

    01:34-01:35

So we're gonna see what's gonna happen.

    01:35-01:37

So Brian, I want you to go open that door.

    01:37-01:38

I want you to bring out what you find over there, okay?

    01:40-01:41

    Well, just the first thing.

    01:44-01:45

Oh yeah, bring that over here.

    01:46-01:48

So Brian, this is my office chair.

    01:48-01:49

I want you to sit down in it, okay?

    01:51-01:51

    Yes, right there's good.

    01:53-01:54

All right, do you get dizzy?

    01:56-01:58

Okay, well, we're definitely gonna find out.

    01:58-02:03

All right, so I would have done this myself, but I get bad vertigo sometimes.

    02:03-02:05

I kinda need my mind working for the rest of this sermon.

    02:06-02:11

What we're gonna do, Brian, is that we're gonna spin you around in my nice office chair and we're gonna see if you can walk in a straight line after that.

    02:12-02:12

    How's that sound?

    02:13-02:13

    Will you catch me?

    02:15-02:15

    You know what?

    02:16-02:18

We have a volunteer to catch Brian if he falls over here.

    02:18-02:19

    Anybody's willing to do that?

    02:20-02:21

    Anybody, you wanna do that?

    02:21-02:22

All right, you stand over there.

    02:23-02:24

All right, I'll do that just for you.

    02:24-02:26

How many spins should I do, what do you think?

    02:27-02:29

20, it sounds like way too much.

    02:29-02:30

Okay, I don't know about that.

    02:30-02:31

How about 10, how about 10?

    02:32-02:33

So you count each spin, okay?

    02:34-02:35

Make sure you keep me honest.

    02:35-02:35

    All right, we ready?

    02:36-02:37

    Assume the position.

    02:38-02:39

    I guess that's the position.

    02:40-02:41

    All right, are you ready?

    02:44-02:45

    You're heavier than I thought.

    02:46-02:46

    (laughing)

    02:51-02:52

    Oh, an extra one.

    02:53-02:54

    All right, go.

    02:57-02:58

    We good, are we good?

    02:59-03:01

All right, everybody give Ryan a round of applause for that.

    03:01-03:02

    Thank you so much.

    03:06-03:10

Now some of you are thinking, Taylor, that was really funny and all, but what was the point of that?

    03:11-03:12

We've all had that experience, right?

    03:13-03:15

where you feel totally dizzy and off balance.

    03:15-03:18

    I hate that feeling.

    03:19-03:21

How often does life feel like that?

    03:23-03:41

We're spun around, round, and around by world events, difficult trials, the frustrations of daily life, and we feel totally unable, totally unequipped to walk on the path that God has laid out for us in his word.

    03:42-03:48

Life is a difficult journey, and we can lose our footing at any time.

    03:49-03:52

That's how Solomon feels at this point in the book of Ecclesiastes.

    03:52-04:05

This book is all about Solomon searching for wisdom and meaning, and he has reached the ceiling of what this world has to offer, and he realizes it's all meaningless apart from God.

    04:06-04:12

He's come face to face with the reality that he's been wrong about a lot of things for a very long time.

    04:12-04:23

His search has spun him around and around and around, and he desperately desires the balance and stability that only God can provide.

    04:24-04:37

In Ecclesiastes 7, verse 15, through chapter eight, verse one, Solomon presents living life God's way as a high wire act, with sinful and deadly extremes on either side.

    04:38-04:44

And walking this tightrope successfully involves making three choices every single day.

    04:44-04:49

And we're gonna spend the rest of this message unpacking those three choices.

    04:50-04:52

So let's jump into the first section of our passage this morning.

    04:52-04:56

It's Ecclesiastes chapter seven, verses 15 through 22.

    04:57-04:58

    Solomon writes this.

    04:59-05:02

In my vain life, I have seen everything.

    05:03-05:05

So Solomon seems like he's in a really good mood right off the bat.

    05:06-05:16

There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness "When there is a wicked man who prolongs his life "and his evil doing, be not overly righteous "and do not make yourself too wise.

    05:17-05:18

    "Why should you destroy yourself?

    05:19-05:21

"Be not overly wicked, neither be a fool.

    05:22-05:24

"Why should you die before your time?

    05:25-05:29

"It is good that you should take hold of this "and from that withhold not your hand.

    05:29-05:32

"For the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.

    05:32-05:36

"Wisdom gives strength to the wise man, "more than 10 rulers who are in a city.

    05:36-05:41

"Surely there is not a righteous man on earth does good and never sins.

    05:42-05:46

Do not take to heart all the things that people say, lest you hear your servants cursing you.

    05:47-05:52

Your heart knows that many times you yourself have cursed others.

    05:53-05:56

So I want each of you to ask yourself this one question this morning.

    05:57-05:59

How can I live a balanced life?

    06:00-06:02

How can I live a balanced life?

    06:02-06:08

Number one, by choosing to be godly instead of unrighteous and self-righteous.

    06:09-06:14

by choosing to be godly instead of unrighteous and self-righteous.

    06:17-06:32

So Solomon points out a really harsh reality that we all come face to face with every single day. Those who do the right thing often seem to suffer for it, while those who are content to do the wrong thing seem to be doing just fine.

    06:33-06:43

Anybody else besides Solomon ever notice, "Friend, you're struggling at work to make any progress or have any success, but that guy who always cuts corners and tells lies, he's always getting the promotion.

    06:44-06:54

You turn on TV and you see shady and corrupt people living in the laps of luxury while you're sitting at your kitchen table cutting giant eagle coupons and struggling to save for the future.

    06:56-07:01

At first glance, it seems like Solomon is telling us, you know what, righteousness is a waste of time.

    07:03-07:04

    Let's read that again.

    07:05-07:11

There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness wicked man who prolongs his life and his evil doing.

    07:11-07:14

Be not overly righteous and do not make yourself too wise.

    07:14-07:16

    Why should you destroy yourself?

    07:17-07:18

Is he saying, yeah, you know what?

    07:18-07:19

    There's no point.

    07:19-07:21

    Nice guys finish last.

    07:21-07:23

Don't bend over backwards to be godly.

    07:23-07:24

Is that really what he's saying?

    07:25-07:30

It can't be because it goes totally against the teaching of the rest of scripture.

    07:30-07:33

And he also tells us, don't be wicked either.

    07:34-07:37

That path leads to death and destruction.

    07:37-07:52

In the original Hebrew, when Solomon says, "Do not be overly righteous," this could also be translated as, "Do not pretend to be righteous," or "Do not be self-righteous." Do not be self-righteous.

    07:52-07:54

In other words, don't be a religious figure going through the motions.

    07:55-07:59

Don't be a judgmental person who looks down your nose at other people.

    08:00-08:07

Find the biblical balance between these two things, between unrighteousness and self-righteousness.

    08:07-08:08

    What is that middle ground?

    08:09-08:12

    It's genuine, true godliness.

    08:13-08:23

It's being a person of humble integrity who does the right thing, not because you have to, but because you want to, because you love God and you want to please Him.

    08:25-08:26

Now, I know what many of you are thinking right now.

    08:26-08:27

    Taylor, you know what?

    08:27-08:28

    I get it.

    08:28-08:29

    Self-righteous is bad.

    08:30-08:30

    It's horrible.

    08:31-08:33

I just don't really struggle with it very much.

    08:35-08:36

I heard somebody laughing, so that's a good sign.

    08:37-08:37

You know, what's wrong with this?

    08:37-08:39

Are you really sure about that?

    08:40-08:41

Let me give you some examples.

    08:42-08:51

Have you ever had someone in your life do something really stupid, really wrong, and you look at them and think, man, what an idiot, I would never do that in a million years.

    08:52-08:53

    Is that self-righteous?

    08:54-08:56

Oh yeah, and we do that all the time.

    08:57-09:05

We play the comparison game where to make ourselves feel better about what we're doing, we look at somebody else who appears to be doing something much worse.

    09:05-09:15

"You know what, I'm not the best, I'm not perfect, but at least I'm not cheating on my spouse and getting drunk every night." Bravo, what a high bar to clear, right?

    09:16-09:25

You've had a hard time accepting a word of rebuke from a fellow Christian who in love comes to you and says, "You know what, I'm just really concerned about how you're talking to your wife.

    09:26-09:31

Really concerned how you're treating your kids and really worried that you're allowing work to just take over your life.

    09:32-09:38

Instead of humbly receiving that, You turn the tables on them, and you make them out to be the bad guy.

    09:38-09:42

You make them to be the self-righteous one, not you.

    09:43-09:44

    How about this?

    09:44-09:52

Has your opinion of a fellow believer ever dropped because they didn't hold to certain standards that you have that aren't even biblically commanded?

    09:53-09:56

They drink and you don't, and you think, why do they do that?

    09:56-09:57

It makes you think a lot less of them.

    09:57-10:04

Or maybe someone in this church dresses too casually for your liking on Sunday mornings it makes you think a little bit less of them.

    10:05-10:12

Without even realizing it, we can be like the Pharisees and come up with these man-made rules and put them on other people.

    10:14-10:19

Let's look at another example of self-righteousness in chapter seven, verses 21 through 22.

    10:20-10:26

Solomon writes, "Do not take to heart "all the things that people say, "lest you hear your servants cursing you.

    10:27-11:14

"Your heart knows that many times "you yourself have cursed others." You may be shocked to hear this, but Christians struggle with gossip and slander like the rest of the world does. Let me give you a second to pick your jaws up off the floor. Christians struggle with gossip, name-calling, rumors. These aren't just small, "Oops, whoops, I shouldn't have done that." These are massive sins that can ruin people's lives and ruin your life, too. These are sparks that can cause a huge fire. How often do we get bent out of shape when someone says something rude about us, but we're so slow to own up to how we talk out of turn about other people. I can't believe what they said. They said this about me.

    11:14-11:19

What about the time you bad-mouthed them last week? How about that?

    11:20-12:03

Solomon's not approving of either of these things. He's saying it's all bad, but so often we play the victim and we refuse to own up to how we sin in this area of our lives. I could go on and on but I think you get the point. No matter who you are, how old you are, you struggle with self-righteousness in some way, shape, or form. You know, I'm a big movie fan and my family actually labels me as a movie snob. Apparently I look down on them for watching Hallmark movies around the Christmas time. I don't know. Who likes Hallmark movies? Who's brave enough enough to admit that. Or so some of you are like, "Yeah, I'm not a fan." Now, I reject this notion that I'm a movie snob. I just like to think that I like good movies.

    12:04-12:53

That was pretty snobbish to say, wasn't it? I really have to work on that. Now, we all don't struggle with being movie snobs like I do, but we can all admit that we struggle with being Christian snobs at times. You'll have to wrestle with this sinful, natural desire to want to be at the top of the heap and step to other people, to get there, to make yourself feel like you're better than everyone else. By God's grace, we have to resist this urge to be self-righteous and instead embrace true righteousness instead. How does this happen? How can you be a person of genuine righteousness? Well, your understanding of who you are has to be shaped by your understanding of who God is. When you compare yourself yourself to other people around you, you can look pretty good.

    12:54-13:02

When you compare yourself to the holy and perfect God of the universe, you begin to see how sinful and needy you really are.

    13:03-13:11

Taking your eyes off of yourself and other people and gluing them onto God changes how you view your own acts of goodness and righteousness.

    13:13-13:16

Listen to what the famous Christian writer C.S. Lewis had to say about this.

    13:16-13:17

I can't say it any better than he did.

    13:18-13:24

"In God, you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself.

    13:25-13:32

Unless you know God as that, and therefore know yourself as nothing in comparison, you do not know God at all.

    13:33-13:35

As long as you are proud, you cannot know God.

    13:36-13:44

A proud man is always looking down on things and down on people, and of course, as long as you're looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.

    13:46-13:49

None of us, Pastor Jeff and myself included, are perfect.

    13:50-13:53

We sin every single day and in many ways.

    13:54-13:56

And Solomon backs this up in verse 20.

    13:56-14:09

"Surely there is not a righteous man on earth "who does good and never sins." This verse is totally true, but I do wanna add on a biblical note that becomes very clear in the New Testament.

    14:10-14:18

"Surely there is not a righteous man on earth "who does good and never sins, except for Jesus." except for Jesus.

    14:18-14:23

He is the only truly perfect, righteous man who's ever walked the face of this earth.

    14:24-14:29

He lived the perfect life you couldn't live and then died the death that you deserve to die.

    14:29-14:35

Because of his sacrifice on the cross, he now looks at you as blameless and righteous.

    14:36-14:37

    How awesome is that?

    14:38-14:44

When the Father looks upon you, he isn't focused on your sin, on your imperfections and your flaws.

    14:44-14:50

Instead, he sees the perfect obedience of his one and only Son.

    14:52-14:57

We must never forget that we are sinners saved by the amazing grace of our God.

    14:59-15:18

We didn't choose him, he chose us. As we were running away from him, he ran us down and grabbed us in his loving embrace. A true understanding of the gospel of grace obliterates any hint of self-righteousness and pride in our lives.

    15:19-15:55

Because we are nobodies saved by the biggest somebody in the universe. Pride and self-righteous have no place in the life of a Christian. They are dangerous and obnoxious weeds that have to be pulled out by the root before they choke out your growth and spiritual maturity. So how do we do that? Well as I just said, by preaching this gospel of grace to yourself every single day, by reminding yourself what God has done for you, by being in his word, not just reading it, but actually putting it into practice, actually doing it, by being an honest community with other believers.

    15:56-15:59

A great way to do that is to join a small group this upcoming week.

    15:59-16:10

On Wednesday, you'll get an email to give you online signups to sign up for a small group, whether you wanna sign back up for your small group from last year, or maybe you're new around here and you need a new small group, you can sign up online.

    16:10-16:16

We'll also have in-person sign-ups on next Sunday after service, as well as September 4th after service.

    16:16-16:21

Joining a small group is a way to be an honest, transparent community with other believers.

    16:21-16:22

    Because you know what?

    16:22-16:24

Christianity is not a solo sport.

    16:25-16:29

Avoiding self-righteousness and becoming righteous cannot be done by yourself.

    16:29-16:31

It has to be done in community.

    16:32-16:37

And pulling out these spiritual weeds of self-righteousness, it's hard work.

    16:38-16:43

It requires brutal honesty with God, with others, and yourself.

    16:45-16:47

All right, secondly, how can I live a balanced life?

    16:47-16:51

By choosing to be wise instead of foolish and arrogant.

    16:53-16:57

By choosing to be wise instead of foolish and arrogant.

    16:59-17:06

Let's continue on to see what Solomon has to say about wisdom and finding balance in that area of our lives in verses 23 through 29.

    17:07-17:09

All this I have tested by wisdom.

    17:09-17:12

I said I will be wise, but it was far from me.

    17:12-17:15

That which has been is far off, deep, very deep.

    17:15-17:16

    Who can find it out?

    17:16-17:24

I turn my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom in the schemes of things and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.

    17:25-17:27

And I find something more bitter than death.

    17:28-17:31

The woman whose heart is snares and nets and whose hands are fetters.

    17:32-17:35

He who pleases God escapes her, but the sinner is taken by her.

    17:36-17:44

Behold, this is what I found, says the preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things, which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found.

    17:45-17:48

One man among a thousand I have found, but a woman among all these I have not found.

    17:49-17:54

See this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes.

    17:55-18:04

There's a lot going on in these verses I can't fully unpack this morning, but I will post on the website, on the blog, just to unpack some of these things I can't cover this morning.

    18:04-18:09

So if you're interested in learning how to avoid women with snares and nets for hearts, go check that out.

    18:09-18:10

    That's really interesting.

    18:11-18:13

But again, you should definitely read it.

    18:13-18:14

    You all sound interested.

    18:15-18:23

But again, in these verses, the ones that we just studied, it seems like Solomon is bagging on wisdom like he seemed to be bagging on righteousness.

    18:24-18:26

Is he telling us again, you know, wisdom is pointless?

    18:27-18:30

Of course not, because he tells us don't be foolish.

    18:30-19:15

And he says in verse 19, "Wisdom gives strength to the wise, man more than 10 rulers who are in a city. He's saying wisdom is powerful, it's effective. This is the guy who wrote the book of Proverbs, which is all about the importance of wisdom and pursuing after it. So it's obvious that Solomon values wisdom, which is knowledge and action. It's the God-given ability to understand his word and put it into practice. But at the same time, Solomon wants us to understand that this world is complex, it's confusing, it's broken. No matter how knowledgeable you are, no matter how mature you are, there are gonna be times when you don't know what to do. Anybody else besides me feel that way sometimes?

    19:15-19:43

You don't know what to do. You don't know what to think about this situation. You don't know why this hard thing is happening to you or a loved one. We all feel like Psalm and in verse 23, "All this I've tested, I'll be wise, but it was far from me." That which has been is far off and deep, very deep. Who can find it out? You're praying for and seeking after wisdom, but it feels like it's a million miles away.

    19:44-20:16

You're seeking after wisdom about issue with your kids, with your job, but you come up with nothing. In those moments we come face to face with our limitations and our weaknesses as human beings. You know as I mentioned earlier I'm a big movie fan or movie snob depending on who you ask and my favorite genre of movies is 80s and 90s action movies. Anybody else? And the best part of those movies isn't the action, isn't the explosions, those are all cool, it's the cheesy action movie one-liners, right?

    20:17-20:18

    Who's most famous for that?

    20:20-20:21

    Schwarzenegger, obviously.

    20:22-20:22

    Who else?

    20:23-20:24

    Stallone, Bruce Willis.

    20:25-20:26

Can we throw out some of these?

    20:27-20:29

What's one from Arnold Schwarzenegger we can think of?

    20:30-20:31

    Hasta la vista, baby.

    20:32-20:33

    Or I'll be back.

    20:34-20:36

Or when he throws the knife to the guy in Commando and says stick around.

    20:36-20:38

I always like that one a lot.

    20:39-20:49

But another actor who does this really well is Clint Eastwood, who's very well known for being Dirty Harry, who's a cop who shoots first and asks questions way, way later.

    20:50-20:54

He's famous for saying things like, go ahead, make my day.

    20:55-20:57

    Or, do you feel lucky?

    20:57-20:59

    Well, do ya, punk?

    21:00-21:10

My favorite is at the end of the second movie, where he blows up the bad guy in this massive fireball explosion, and he looks all cool at the car and says, a man's got to know his limitations.

    21:12-21:18

Beyond the coolness of that line, there is a hint of biblical truth in it.

    21:18-21:24

The essence of true wisdom is understanding your own limitations as a human being.

    21:25-21:29

This even involves understanding the limitations of wisdom.

    21:30-21:36

As I said earlier, you'll never, ever, ever be able to understand everything that you want to in this life.

    21:37-21:38

    You'll never even come close.

    21:39-21:41

Don't be arrogant and think that you can.

    21:41-21:43

    You are not God.

    21:44-21:49

You don't have an eternal perspective on this world and this universe as he does.

    21:49-21:52

We have a teeny tiny perspective.

    21:53-21:56

It's like trying to look at a massive painting through a small keyhole.

    21:57-22:00

We can see bits and pieces, but we can't see the whole picture.

    22:01-22:08

With the trust that our all powerful God not only sees the whole picture, but he's in complete control of it.

    22:11-22:14

And this is so easy for me to stand up here and say this to you all.

    22:14-22:16

It is so hard to live this out.

    22:17-22:21

It's easy for me to say, you know what, yeah, trust God in the midst of the death of a loved one.

    22:21-22:26

Trust God when you have an adult child who's running away from the Lord, even though you pray for them every single day.

    22:26-22:31

Trust God while your marriage seems to be falling apart and you have no idea what to do.

    22:31-22:36

In these moments we're spun around by life, it's so hard to trust God.

    22:36-22:40

It's so hard to give our fears and anxieties over to Him.

    22:41-22:44

But brothers and sisters, what other option do we have?

    22:45-22:49

The alternative is despair and hopelessness, and that's no way to live.

    22:50-22:51

That is not the path of wisdom.

    22:52-22:54

That is the path of foolishness.

    22:55-23:04

Instead, let's entrust ourselves and our families to our all-wise Heavenly Father who knows exactly what He is doing, even when it seems like He does not.

    23:06-23:09

All right, finally, how can I live a balanced life?

    23:10-23:13

By choosing to stand out instead of blend in.

    23:13-23:15

By choosing to stand out instead of blend in.

    23:19-23:25

So Solomon closes out his teaching on balanced living with the results of leading a godly life.

    23:25-23:28

He says this in chapter eight, verse one, "Who is like the wise?

    23:29-23:31

"And who knows the interpretation of a thing?

    23:31-23:42

"A man's wisdom makes his face shine "and the hardness of his face is changed." In other words, all the rough edges begin to be smoothed out by God.

    23:43-23:48

So according to Solomon, true wisdom leads to a changed life that cannot be ignored.

    23:49-23:55

You know, we live in a culture that only acts foolish, but celebrates foolishness on a daily basis.

    23:57-24:06

Isaiah 520 tells us this, "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, "who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

    24:07-24:10

Can you think of a better verse to describe America in 2022?

    24:10-24:11

    Right now, I know I can't.

    24:12-24:24

You turn on the TV, you see politicians, news anchors, social media influencers, celebrating the things that break the heart of God and labeling his ways as hateful and unloving.

    24:25-24:35

In the darkness of this foolishness, God is calling us as his followers to shine the light of his word, to shine the light of his wisdom and righteousness.

    24:37-24:48

Back in the book of Exodus, as Moses comes down from Mount Sinai, as he spent all this time with God, his face literally shone like a light bulb from being in the presence of God.

    24:49-24:54

Moses was changed by his time with God, and it caused him to stand out from the crowd.

    24:55-24:56

    Is that true of you?

    24:58-25:00

Has your relationship with God changed you?

    25:00-25:03

Has your relationship with God caused you to stand out?

    25:04-25:05

Are you blending in with everybody else?

    25:06-25:08

Do you look just like everybody else?

    25:09-25:16

You know, as a teenager, I desperately wanted to fit in, and I would act like a chameleon at times so that people would like and accept me.

    25:17-25:20

I would put other people down 'cause it made my friends laugh.

    25:20-25:25

I would talk in a certain way, and I even pretended to like Pittsburgh sports, which I did not care about.

    25:26-25:27

You can all boo me right now if you want.

    25:27-25:29

Just go ahead, get it over with.

    25:30-25:31

All right, thank you, thank you.

    25:31-25:33

What a great welcome to my first sermon.

    25:33-25:34

Just getting a bunch of booze.

    25:35-25:41

If you try to talk to me about sports, you'll see my eyes quickly glaze over as I daydream about something more interesting to me.

    25:42-25:48

No, but in all seriousness, no matter how old you are, deep down, we all want people to like and accept us.

    25:48-25:53

Doesn't matter if you're five years old, 13 years old, or 85 years old.

    25:54-25:55

We don't wanna go against the flow naturally.

    25:56-25:57

We don't wanna stand out as different.

    25:57-25:59

We want to go with the flow.

    26:00-26:03

But that totally goes against our call as Christians.

    26:03-26:07

We're not called to blend in, but to stand out.

    26:08-26:13

We're to care more what God thinks about us than what other people think about us.

    26:13-26:16

We obey the word even when it costs us something.

    26:17-26:27

This requires a willingness to stand out as different at work by not gossiping, putting other people down, cutting corners, like I said, or putting down the boss.

    26:27-26:28

How hard is that last one, by the way?

    26:30-26:41

Or standing out in your neighborhood by loving your neighbors, by showing them the love of Jesus Christ, it requires a willingness to be different.

    26:43-26:45

I used to say this to my youth group kids all the time at my last church.

    26:45-26:49

If you want to be cool and popular, then Christianity probably isn't for you.

    26:51-27:05

We are commanded to go against the grain of this culture and hold to things that are not popular, like the sanctity of unborn life, the truthfulness of God's word, and the reality that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life and a relationship with God.

    27:05-27:07

Yeah, these things aren't very popular right now, are they?

    27:08-27:18

And it's so sad to me to see so many churches across this country sacrificing faithfulness to God's word to blend in and fit in with everybody else.

    27:21-27:24

How thankful should we be that we're in a church that that's not gonna happen?

    27:25-28:15

Because the Word is our supreme guide and not this culture. We cling to this instead of what other people think about us. Let me ask you a few questions. Can you be content knowing that you're pleasing other people more than you're pleasing God? Can you be content to cover up the light of Jesus Christ because it's much more convenient to do so? I hope the answer to these questions is no because we live in a time that needs Christians with spines of steel who are willing to lovingly and graciously stand in the gap for the truth and hold their God-given convictions no matter what. We live in a time that needs balanced, wise, and righteous Christians who are shining the light of Jesus Christ.

    28:17-28:23

So after hearing this word from Solomon, you may feel convicted that your life is is unstable and off balance right now.

    28:24-28:31

Instead of being discouraged by that, I want you to be encouraged that God has given you a fresh chance to find stability in him.

    28:32-28:37

The good news is God does not expect perfection from you in this life, 'cause that is impossible.

    28:37-28:39

    But he does expect progress.

    28:40-28:50

You will fail and you will fall off this high wire, this tight rope, but the great news is that God is always there to catch you and put you back on track.

    28:51-28:58

But like any successful tightrope walker or balance beam, gymnast-- I don't know what the term even is-- this requires dedication.

    28:59-29:01

    This requires practice.

    29:02-29:05

God is there to offer you his help, to offer you his power.

    29:06-29:13

But right now, today, are you willing to grab a hold of it and put in the dedication and effort that is necessary?

    29:15-29:16

    The band can come up.

    29:16-29:18

I want you all to bow your heads and close your eyes.

    29:21-29:22

And I want us to spend a few minutes with the Lord.

    29:24-29:30

All of us, myself included, should admit that we're off balance and unstable in many ways right now.

    29:31-29:34

I don't know what that is, but you do, and so does God.

    29:36-29:49

Go to the Lord and ask Him for His help to change, to make that progress, to embrace godliness, to embrace wisdom, and to embrace this responsibility to be a Christian witness.

    29:50-29:54

a minute or two with the Lord, and I'll close us in a final prayer, and then we'll go to the Lord and worship.

    29:56-30:02

God, as we just sung a few minutes ago, we thank you that you're the God of second chances.

    30:03-30:09

We thank you that you didn't leave us where you found us, but you pulled us out of the mess of our sin and gave us new life.

    30:10-30:16

If there's anybody in this room, Lord, who doesn't know you, doesn't have a relationship with you, Lord, I pray you'd open up their heart to the gospel of grace.

    30:18-30:20

they would accept Jesus Christ their Lord and Savior.

    30:21-30:27

And find that stability that only you can provide in this crazy world that's trying to shake us down.

    30:29-30:34

Lord, for the rest of us, help us to find, again, that stability yet again.

    30:35-30:37

To walk in the ways of your word, even when it's hard.

    30:38-30:42

To trust you, even when we have no idea what you're doing, but we know that you do.

    30:43-30:45

Lord, we thank you for your word.

    30:45-30:48

We thank you, you've given us this light in a dark place.

    30:49-30:56

Lord, help us to lead lives of balance, wisdom, and righteousness this week and for the rest of our lives.

    30:56-30:58

    In Jesus' name, amen.
