Let's bow our heads and I'm going to ask you if you would pray for me.

    01:05-01:06

I'm going to pray for you.

    01:07-01:13

As advertised, this section in Hebrews is, there's a lot going on here.

    01:13-01:24

And it is so important that we understand because there are some like literally life-changing truths that we're walking through here.

    01:24-01:26

    And we wanna get that.

    01:27-01:29

So I want you to please pray for me to be clear.

    01:30-01:33

And I will pray for us to have hearts open to receive this.

    01:33-01:37

All right, so let's pray and then let's get at it.

    01:40-01:55

Father, we thank you for your word because we would certainly know some things about you just by looking out of our windows, but regarding your mercy and your grace and your love and the work that you've accomplished through Jesus Christ, we would not know that.

    01:56-02:02

Just through the creation, Father, you've given us your word so that we might know you.

    02:03-02:10

So Father, I pray that by the power of your spirit you would really help us to dial in right now.

    02:13-02:19

Give us understanding, not just for head knowledge, Father.

    02:20-02:24

Let this be the means by which we grow in our faith.

    02:26-02:28

    Let this be our confidence.

    02:30-02:32

Father, let the change take place today.

    02:33-02:35

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    02:35-02:38

All of God's people said, amen.

    02:40-02:42

Hebrews chapter nine, are you there?

    02:43-02:51

You know, it's an interesting thing when you're an adult, to go back to the house where you grew up.

    02:52-02:53

    Have you ever done that?

    02:53-02:57

You see, in my situation, My family never moved.

    02:57-03:01

So we were all in the same house growing up.

    03:02-03:11

And I noticed different times going back through my adult life, you just sort of walk around and things have meaning to you, right?

    03:11-03:17

Like I remember, this is where dad used to lay down after work and watch the pirate game.

    03:17-03:23

And this is the room where we used to play ball and get yelled at for making too much noise.

    03:23-03:29

And I remember sled riding in our backyard.

    03:30-03:36

When I was a kid, it was like three miles to walk back up the hill.

    03:38-03:42

And going back as an adult, it's like three steps.

    03:42-03:44

Like this was, you know what I'm talking about?

    03:44-03:46

    Like this was so huge.

    03:46-03:49

And I remember for years that just baffled me.

    03:49-04:02

And I'm like, "Boy, the house just seems like so much bigger and the yard was so much bigger and now everything is smaller." And then one day I realized things didn't get smaller.

    04:04-04:05

    I got bigger, right?

    04:05-04:13

And there's just so much meaning attached to all of these things in the old house, right?

    04:13-04:20

Well, in the new covenant, the Bible tells us that God lives, where?

    04:21-04:25

In the heart of every believer of Jesus Christ.

    04:27-04:29

But you know, it wasn't always that way.

    04:31-04:35

God had a house that he used to live in.

    04:37-04:46

And God's house has special meaning too, but in a much deeper and more meaningful way.

    04:48-04:56

So today we are going to have an overview of how the old covenant worked.

    04:58-05:04

And we're going to be talking about God's old house, the tabernacle and the temple.

    05:04-05:15

And I know, look, going into this, on the front end, you're gonna be looking at this going, okay, this is very fascinating, but what in the world does this have to do with me?

    05:19-05:23

I'm gonna tell you ahead of time what it has to do with you, because you really gotta pay attention to this.

    05:26-05:28

This will change the way that you think about Jesus.

    05:31-05:38

And this will completely change the way you view your relationship with him.

    05:39-05:41

So you gotta stay tuned in with me here, all right?

    05:42-05:45

So our series has been why Jesus, right?

    05:46-05:46

    Why Jesus?

    05:46-05:48

Lots of people have died on crosses.

    05:48-05:50

That was a common form of execution.

    05:50-05:58

So why do we come in and preach and celebrate and sing to and make a big deal out of this man who was...

    05:59-06:00

That's what the book of Hebrews is about.

    06:01-06:03

He wasn't just a man executed.

    06:03-06:04

This is the son of God.

    06:05-06:06

This is the lamb of God.

    06:06-06:11

This is God in the flesh who laid down his life as a sacrifice on our behalf.

    06:12-06:13

So we've been saying, why Jesus?

    06:14-06:18

Well, today we're going to sort of look at the other side of that coin on your outline.

    06:19-06:21

We're going to ask why the old covenant?

    06:23-06:25

All right, look at verse one in chapter nine.

    06:25-06:38

It says, "Now even the first covenant "had regulations for worship "and an earthly place of holiness." Let's stop right there.

    06:39-06:58

We're gonna talk about the earthly place for a few moments because understand, Hebrews was written to a bunch of Hebrews and they would have understood how the temple and sacrifice and priests, and they would have understood how all of that worked.

    06:59-07:03

And us Gentiles, let's just say we need to get caught up.

    07:04-07:10

So let's talk about the tabernacle.

    07:10-07:17

Now in the Old Testament, the temple was really just like the permanent version of the tabernacle.

    07:17-07:23

While Moses was leading the Israelites out of Egypt, God's house, so to speak, was a tent.

    07:24-07:29

It was put up and it was torn down and it was moved and that was called the tabernacle.

    07:29-07:36

So I'm gonna put my cheat sheet up here so that I stay on track.

    07:37-07:44

But I wanna talk about what the tabernacle was like in the Old Testament, all right?

    07:44-07:47

    Now, this is a paraphrase.

    07:47-07:55

Do you realize in the Bible, there's like two chapters about creation and there's like 50 chapters about the tabernacle?

    07:56-07:58

So this is not going to be exhaustive, all right?

    07:58-08:06

This is going to be an overview, but it's very important to understanding what he's talking about in this passage, all right?

    08:08-08:11

    So, this was the tabernacle.

    08:11-08:13

    It was this structure.

    08:18-08:19

Is that gonna be big enough?

    08:20-08:21

    Can you see that?

    08:22-08:22

    All right.

    08:25-08:29

All right, we're gonna work with this, just a squint or something.

    08:30-08:34

So direction-wise, okay, this would be the north side.

    08:35-08:36

This is just the way I wanna draw it, all right?

    08:36-08:38

So this would be the south side.

    08:38-08:41

This would be the west side that would make this what?

    08:41-08:42

    East, right?

    08:42-08:45

Okay, what had a gate right here?

    08:45-08:47

I think it was like a 30-foot wide gate.

    08:48-08:55

And when you walk in, there was, first of all, you would encounter the altar of burnt offering.

    08:56-09:00

So that was for sacrifice, all right?

    09:01-09:05

We're just gonna write, we're just gonna abbreviate here, right?

    09:05-09:06

So that was for the sacrifice.

    09:07-09:13

And then after that, there was a labor and the labor was for washing.

    09:15-09:20

All right, then you get to the holy place or the tabernacle proper.

    09:21-09:23

It was divided into two sections.

    09:23-09:25

And this isn't a scale, okay?

    09:26-09:31

but it was like 45 by 15.

    09:31-09:34

So the first section was like 30 by 15, again, not to scale.

    09:34-09:38

But the first section, this was called the Holy Place.

    09:39-09:43

And the priest would go in here every day to work.

    09:43-09:46

And there were really three things in the Holy Place.

    09:47-09:50

First of all, there was the lamp stand.

    09:50-09:53

All right, so we're gonna, we'll make a symbol here.

    09:53-09:55

How about, does that look like fire?

    09:58-10:00

Is that good enough for fire for the lamp stand?

    10:02-10:03

    Anybody?

    10:05-10:06

Does anybody else wanna come up and draw the fire?

    10:09-10:11

That's gonna be the fire for the, there's a lamp stand.

    10:11-10:16

Okay, the seven lights on it, the seven, there's the lamp stand.

    10:16-10:19

Then we had here the altar of incense.

    10:20-10:21

    Okay, oh boy.

    10:21-10:25

So the altar of incense, we'll just draw smoke here, right?

    10:26-10:27

    Does that look like smoke?

    10:30-10:37

All right, and then here, and over here, we have the, there was the table of the showbread.

    10:37-10:39

All right, so I'm gonna draw a loaf here.

    10:39-10:42

Well, I don't know if I can draw a loaf here.

    10:42-10:42

    Let's see.

    10:47-10:48

    All right, that's not bad.

    10:49-10:49

    That's not bad.

    10:50-10:54

All right, so that was in the holy place and the priest would go in there to work every day.

    10:55-11:01

Well, there was a, the Holy of Holies, okay, so there's a veil right here, right?

    11:01-11:05

There's a very thick veil right here.

    11:05-11:09

And in the Holy of Holies was really one thing.

    11:10-11:14

And that was the Ark of the Covenant, right?

    11:17-11:20

Now the Ark of the Covenant, it was a box.

    11:20-11:24

We're gonna see more about it in the passage here.

    11:24-11:28

But the top, the lid, was known as the mercy seat.

    11:28-11:32

And that was where God's unique presence on earth was.

    11:32-11:37

Remember we said under the new covenant, God's unique presence on earth is in the heart of believers.

    11:37-11:40

But in the old covenant, if you were like, "Where is God?

    11:40-11:47

Where's his unique presence?" God lives on the mercy seat in the Ark, on top of the ark rather.

    11:48-11:57

All right, and now with the Holy of Holies, the high priest went in there one day a year, and that was the day of atonement, that's Leviticus 16.

    11:58-12:02

And again, this was every day, this was one day a year.

    12:03-12:20

They're like, "Well, what was the day of atonement for?" Well, Israel over time, the sins would sort of pile up, Right, the unintentional sins, the I sinned and I didn't even realize I was sinning, and those would pile up.

    12:20-12:30

So every year, the day of atonement was to offer sacrifice for all of the unintentional or ignorant sins of the people, right?

    12:31-12:46

So what happened on that day was the high priest would wash And he'd put on what I like to call the glorious robes.

    12:46-12:49

His high priestly garments were just lavish.

    12:49-12:55

He had this breastplate with 12 stones on it to represent the tribes of Israel.

    12:55-12:59

And they were just these beautiful, elaborate robes that he wore.

    13:01-13:16

And he would offer the daily sacrifice, this was on the Day of Atonement, he would offer the daily sacrifice, then he would take those glorious robes off and he would wash again, and he would put on pure white linen.

    13:18-13:29

Then what he would do is he would take coals from this altar, and he put them in a censer with incense, and he would take that into the Holy of Holies.

    13:32-13:45

Then he would come out, and he would offer sacrifice for his own sin, And he would have to take that blood and sprinkle it on top of the ark for his sin.

    13:47-13:50

All right, then he came out again and there were two goats.

    13:51-13:59

Again, this is all Leviticus 16, but these two goats, they would cast lots, which is basically like saying rolling dice, okay?

    13:59-14:02

It was a way to determine God's will in the Old Testament.

    14:03-14:04

And one of the goats would be for God.

    14:06-14:10

And the other goat would be for Azazel, the scapegoat.

    14:10-14:25

So the goat that was for God, the high priest would sacrifice that one and he would sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat on the Ark again for the sins of Israel.

    14:27-14:33

And then the scapegoat, he would come out and he would lay his hands on the scapegoat.

    14:34-14:40

And it was sort of symbolically transferring the sins of the people onto this goat.

    14:40-14:43

And then they would take this goat way out into the wilderness and they'd let it go.

    14:44-14:49

And that was to show Israel, look, your sin has been taken away from you.

    14:49-14:51

    Your sin has been removed.

    14:53-14:58

Then the high priest would put his glorious robes back on.

    15:00-15:06

That's how the day of atonement and this whole thing worked.

    15:07-15:36

So, let's look at verses 2 through 7, as he paraphrases that. He says, "For a tent was prepared. The first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the presence, it is called the holy place. Behind the second curtain was There's a second section called the most holy place.

    15:37-15:47

Having the golden altar of incense and the Ark of the Covenant covered on all sides with gold in which was a golden urn.

    15:47-15:49

Okay, so this is what was inside the Ark.

    15:49-15:50

Like it was a box, right?

    15:50-15:51

    What was in there?

    15:51-15:52

    Here it is.

    15:52-15:55

In which was a golden urn holding the manna.

    15:56-15:59

Okay, you know, that was the food that God supernaturally provided.

    15:59-16:02

So they had a, basically a jar of manna.

    16:02-16:09

It says, "An Aaron's staff that budded and the tablets of the covenants.

    16:11-16:25

Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat." Okay, so carved into the ark were these two angels and they sort of, you know, were carved in such a way that they were over top of the mercy seat.

    16:27-16:34

I love this, he says, "Of these things we cannot now speak in detail." Like, yeah, again, this is a paraphrase.

    16:34-16:35

There's a whole lot going on here.

    16:36-16:38

This is the gist of it, all right?

    16:38-16:51

He says, "These preparations having thus been made, the priests go regularly into the first section, performing their ritual duties, but into the second," okay, that was the everyday stuff here, right?

    16:52-17:00

He says, "But into the second, only the high priest goes in he but once a year." That's Day of Atonement, Leviticus 16.

    17:00-17:05

and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself.

    17:05-17:07

Remember we said that's his first sacrifice.

    17:09-17:15

And for the unintentional sins of the people, that is the goat that was offered day of atonement.

    17:17-17:20

So that was how the old covenant worked.

    17:23-17:27

I can tell the look on some of your faces, you're like, good to know.

    17:27-17:28

    (congregation laughing)

    17:30-17:36

Well, hang on there, your mind is about to explode.

    17:37-17:37

    All right?

    17:42-17:45

Number two, what the old covenant did do.

    17:47-17:47

    All right?

    17:48-17:50

Let's talk about what the old covenant did do.

    17:51-18:01

Because at this point in the book of Hebrews, okay, you're writing to Jews, and you're basically saying we get this new high priest, And the first covenant is obsolete and he's been going through all of this.

    18:02-18:07

And you can imagine that there are some Jews that are reading this are like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on a second.

    18:07-18:10

You're telling me that the old covenant had no purpose.

    18:10-18:11

    Is that what you're saying?

    18:11-18:15

You're saying all that stuff that was part of our culture, part of our history, part of our national identity.

    18:16-18:16

    That doesn't mean anything.

    18:17-18:21

Is that what you're saying?" And he's like, "No, that's not what I'm saying at all.

    18:22-18:25

The old covenant, it wasn't bad.

    18:26-18:27

    It was temporary.

    18:28-18:35

And the old covenant did exactly what it was designed to do and what it was designed to do, do you know what all this was designed to do?

    18:36-18:40

This was designed to picture Jesus Christ.

    18:49-18:59

Now get this, Day of Atonement, Leviticus 16, that once a year sacrifice, Holy of Holies.

    19:00-19:05

The Holy of Holies here really represents what Jesus did while he was on the earth.

    19:06-19:07

When he was here, what did he do?

    19:07-19:11

The main thing he did was he sacrificed himself for the sins of the people.

    19:12-19:14

And the Holy of Holies represents that.

    19:14-19:17

The Holy of Holies represents the earthly ministry of Jesus.

    19:18-19:21

You know, just like the high priest, he only went in here once a year.

    19:21-19:22

    It was a rare thing.

    19:22-19:28

Well, Jesus, ultra rare, one time, one event, once for all, he made the once for all sacrifice.

    19:28-19:31

The Holy of Holies represents what Jesus did on the earth.

    19:33-19:39

The only thing Jesus didn't do that the high priest did in those days, was remember we said the high priest offered first a sacrifice for himself.

    19:39-19:43

Jesus didn't do that because he had no sin.

    19:44-19:45

He didn't need to sacrifice for himself.

    19:46-19:52

He was the sacrifice for our sin, but he himself without sin didn't have to sacrifice for himself.

    19:52-19:52

    All right?

    19:55-19:57

But here's the mind blowing thing.

    19:58-20:09

Remember we said on the day of atonement, what the high priest did was he removed the glorious robes, he put on the plain white linen, and he was basically just dressing like all the other priests.

    20:09-20:12

And then he offered the sacrifice for the people.

    20:12-20:16

And then when he was done, he put the glorious robes back on.

    20:17-20:18

You know what that's a picture of?

    20:19-20:22

That's a picture of the incarnation.

    20:23-20:28

Because you see what Jesus Christ did, he removed his glory.

    20:29-20:34

He humbled himself to become a man.

    20:35-20:37

It's like the high priest removing the glorious robes.

    20:37-20:44

Jesus took off the glory of his awesomeness in heaven to become what?

    20:44-20:47

Putting on the plain white linen to become a human being.

    20:50-20:57

And when he became that human being, he did it in order to offer that sacrifice for all of his people, right?

    20:58-21:03

And then what did Jesus do when he was done offering the sacrifice for the people?

    21:04-21:07

He went back to heaven and put that glory back on.

    21:08-21:16

So do you see even the way that the high priest would change his clothes was a picture of the incarnation of Jesus Christ.

    21:19-21:20

    Awesome stuff.

    21:21-21:25

When Jesus was on the cross, you see the high priest, he could only go behind the curtain once a year.

    21:26-21:29

When Jesus was on the cross, the Bible tells us that that curtain tore in two.

    21:32-21:36

So that now we can draw near to God because of his once and for all sacrifice.

    21:38-21:39

    It's mind blowing stuff.

    21:41-21:42

    But wait, there's more.

    21:45-21:50

We said, this represents the Holy of Holies, represents what Jesus did when he was on the earth.

    21:50-21:52

Like, well, what does the Holy place do?

    21:52-21:55

You know, priests work by the way, they weren't loafers.

    21:56-21:58

    They, the priests actually worked.

    22:01-22:04

And remember we said, this is what the priests did every day.

    22:04-22:14

They would go in here to trim the wicks, make sure that the incense was going and restocking the bread.

    22:16-22:18

This is what the priest did every day.

    22:18-22:22

And these represent what Jesus Christ still does for us every day.

    22:24-22:26

    Like what's Jesus doing now?

    22:27-22:27

    This.

    22:30-22:31

    The lampstand represents light, right?

    22:31-22:33

    Jesus Christ lights our way.

    22:33-22:41

And that could be a whole sermon series, the picture of living in the darkness of sin, Jesus Christ being our light.

    22:41-22:45

Jesus said, "I'm the light of the world." He's lighting our way right now.

    22:45-22:48

He's illuminating the way we should go as his followers.

    22:50-22:54

The bread is a picture that Jesus Christ feeds and sustains us.

    22:54-22:56

We have no life apart from him.

    22:57-23:00

    He is our spiritual nourishment.

    23:01-23:02

    That's pictured by the bread.

    23:02-23:05

And incense, biblically, that's always a picture of prayer.

    23:06-23:06

    Right?

    23:06-23:08

Incense is a picture of prayer going before God.

    23:09-23:11

And we already saw in Hebrews, what is Jesus doing?

    23:11-23:13

It says, "He always lives to," what?

    23:13-23:18

"Make intercession for us." So this represents, what's Jesus doing now?

    23:18-23:23

He's guiding us and he's feeding us and he's interceding to God on our behalf.

    23:26-23:28

So what did the old covenant do?

    23:29-23:30

    It pictured Christ.

    23:33-23:35

And I would say amazingly so.

    23:36-23:41

Even this Christ offering sacrifice, the labor, picturing, cleansing, Christ cleansing us.

    23:42-23:44

This is all a picture of Jesus.

    23:46-23:48

But number three, let's talk about what the old covenant didn't do.

    23:50-23:52

Let's look at verses eight through 10.

    23:54-24:12

He says, "By this, the Holy Spirit indicates "that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing, which is symbolic for the present age.

    24:13-24:32

According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of Reformation.

    24:33-24:35

"What the old covenant didn't do.

    24:35-24:39

"It didn't make you righteous." The old covenant couldn't do that.

    24:39-24:40

"It didn't take you to heaven.

    24:43-24:51

"It didn't take away your sin." And see the problem is many people failed to see that this was just a picture.

    24:51-24:54

It was imperfect and it was temporary, and it was a picture.

    24:54-24:56

And that's what he's saying here in his passages.

    24:56-25:02

These physical rituals were until the time of reformation.

    25:02-25:05

The word in the Greek literally means until things were set right.

    25:06-25:13

In other words, this was a picture until Jesus Christ came to fulfill everything that this stood for.

    25:14-25:15

    Are you still with me?

    25:16-25:17

    I can start over.

    25:19-25:20

But here's something else it didn't do.

    25:24-26:22

He says in verse nine, "It couldn't perfect the conscience of the worshiper." worshiper. It couldn't perfect the conscience of the worshiper. See, that was the problem for many people in the time of Hebrews, and that was a problem for us today. And that's this. We have this tendency as people to turn the religious ritual into the thing. We put all of our stock in the religious ritual. As long as I go through the motions and do the things that God told me to do, that is really what matters. Okay? We do our acts of religion and we're like, "This is what matters and this is what makes God happy." And as people, again, you study the major religions of the world.

    26:22-26:26

I've studied all of the major ones and they all have this common denominator.

    26:26-26:29

What do we have to do to make God happy?

    26:31-26:32

    We've got to do this.

    26:32-26:36

I got to make sure that I, I got to make sure that I'm checking all of the boxes.

    26:36-26:40

Am I absolutely doing everything that God wants me to do?

    26:43-26:58

And the question here, people, is why do we get so caught up and thinking that we have to perform, that we have to do religious things in order to make God happy.

    26:58-26:59

    Why do we do that?

    27:01-27:07

Why are we so, as human beings, why are we so obsessed with this idea of I work to earn God's favor?

    27:07-27:08

Do you know why we do that?

    27:10-27:11

    It's because of your conscience.

    27:12-27:13

    That's why.

    27:14-27:20

So today we're going to talk about the conscience.

    27:22-27:32

Look again in verse nine, he says, "These things cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper." That is the issue.

    27:32-27:34

And we're gonna see it again in verse 14.

    27:34-27:36

    He's talking about the conscience.

    27:37-27:38

    You're like, what is it?

    27:39-27:40

    What is the conscience?

    27:41-27:42

It's kind of an abstract thing, isn't it?

    27:44-27:51

I mean, the conscience is not really something we can like take out and analyze and measure it and dissect it.

    27:51-27:54

We can't really do that, but we all know we have one, right?

    27:55-27:56

    What is it?

    27:57-27:58

    Well, here's a definition.

    27:59-28:10

The conscience is the inner feeling that acts as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior.

    28:11-28:13

I forget to put that on the thing.

    28:13-28:14

Yeah, I forgot to, that's my bad.

    28:16-28:17

    I'm gonna say that again.

    28:18-28:26

It's the inner feeling that acts as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior.

    28:27-28:28

    That's what your conscience is.

    28:31-28:32

    Another definition is this.

    28:32-28:36

It's the internal voice that sits in judgment over your actions.

    28:36-28:43

Everything that you do, your conscience is like a judge saying that was right or that was wrong.

    28:44-28:47

You did well, you did bad.

    28:47-28:51

That's your conscience, evaluating everything that you do.

    28:52-28:53

    I like this definition.

    28:54-28:54

    I read this week.

    28:55-28:56

    What's a conscience?

    28:56-29:00

Somebody said, your conscience is that which feels bad when everything else feels good.

    29:04-29:07

And right now people are like, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to laugh at that.

    29:08-29:09

    Thank you.

    29:10-29:10

    (congregation laughing)

    29:11-29:12

That's kind of an amen from Owen.

    29:14-29:20

Now your conscience can work before or after an act, right?

    29:22-29:24

    Your conscience can prod you.

    29:25-29:28

That when you have a decision to make, your conscience can say, "Listen, this is the right thing to do.

    29:28-29:29

    "You need to do this.

    29:30-29:35

"This is how you need to do it." Your conscience kind of prod you or like warns you from doing it.

    29:35-29:35

    Like, "Don't do that.

    29:36-29:44

"Now, please do not do that." Your conscience is like, "This is wrong if you do that." But it can also work after an act, right?

    29:44-29:52

You commit something and your conscience is the thing in your head when you are trying to sleep at night and you're conscious, like you shouldn't have done that.

    29:52-29:52

    You shouldn't have said that.

    29:53-29:53

    That was wrong of you.

    29:54-29:54

    You need to apologize.

    29:55-29:55

    That was bad.

    29:56-29:57

    You shouldn't have done that.

    29:57-29:59

Or, hey, that was the right thing.

    29:59-30:00

    You did the right thing.

    30:00-30:02

I know it was hard, but that was the right thing.

    30:02-30:06

That's your conscience evaluating everything that you do.

    30:07-30:08

    Right?

    30:10-30:15

Now here's a myth, and you can't myth this.

    30:17-30:21

That your conscience, your conscience tells you what's right and wrong.

    30:22-30:23

    That is a myth.

    30:24-30:28

Listen, 'cause some of you right now are like, you're wrong, listen, hear me out.

    30:31-30:38

Your conscience only insists that you do what you think is right.

    30:39-30:41

Your conscience doesn't determine what's right and wrong.

    30:42-30:47

Your conscience acts in judgment over what you think is right and wrong.

    30:49-30:51

But your conscience can be mistaken.

    30:52-30:56

And your conscience will accuse you when you violate your moral standard.

    30:58-31:02

But here's the thing, don't miss this because this is where he's going with this in the passage.

    31:05-31:11

Your conscience accuses you when you violate your moral standard, but your moral standard might be wrong.

    31:13-31:14

Your moral standard might be wrong.

    31:16-31:17

Like, what do you mean by that?

    31:17-31:18

Let me give you an example.

    31:21-31:23

Let's imagine that there's somebody visiting with us today.

    31:25-31:33

And on their way out these doors here, they look on that shelf and they see there's these really nice hard bound, large print ESV Bibles.

    31:34-31:39

And the person walking out sees those Bibles and they pick one up and they're like, this is a really nice Bible.

    31:45-31:46

And they tuck it under their coat.

    31:48-31:50

And they sneak to their car with it.

    31:51-31:54

And they put it in their seat and they drive out of here as fast as they can.

    31:55-32:05

Well, that person tonight is looking at that Bible I shouldn't have done that.

    32:06-32:09

    I can't believe I just stole a Bible from a church.

    32:10-32:12

Like, I am the worst human being ever.

    32:12-32:13

    I am such a jerk.

    32:14-32:15

I mean, does it get any lower?

    32:15-32:16

I stole a Bible from the church.

    32:17-32:21

I actually stuck it under my coat, and what is the matter with me?

    32:22-32:24

Why in the world would I steal a Bible?

    32:26-32:29

And your conscience is just like destroying you.

    32:29-32:31

    Like, you are scum.

    32:31-32:33

Like, I can't believe you did that.

    32:36-32:47

So then you come to me and you confess, you're like, "Pastor Jeff, I stole this Bible "and I feel horrible and I wanna make it right." And I tell you, "Oh, do you know why we bought those?

    32:47-32:53

"We bought those to give away to people that need them." So do you see how your conscience can be wrong?

    32:54-33:00

You sincerely felt like garbage thinking you stole it, but then you found out you didn't actually steal it.

    33:01-33:06

We actually want you to take one, And that's true, if you see one and you want it, we want you to take one.

    33:07-33:09

But do you see how your conscience can be wrong?

    33:10-33:13

And that's what he's addressing here in this passage.

    33:14-33:17

The issue that he's talking about here is dead works.

    33:17-33:20

Your conscience, here's what he's saying, listen.

    33:20-33:28

Your conscience is plagued by guilt because you're trying so hard to work and be right with God.

    33:32-33:34

but your conscience can be wrong.

    33:37-33:41

You know, every area of your life, you have this mindset that you have to work to be accepted.

    33:42-33:49

Right, I go into my marriage, like my wife's happy with me when I perform well, I do what she wants me to do.

    33:50-33:53

Make sure the honey-do list is done, then she's happy with me.

    33:55-33:58

And we take that mindset to sometimes in our home.

    33:59-34:03

Like my parents only love me when I'm doing what they want me to do.

    34:04-34:06

And we take the concept to work.

    34:06-34:10

My boss is only happy with me when I'm doing the job the way he wants me to do it.

    34:11-34:12

    We take it to school.

    34:12-34:17

My teacher only likes me when I perform well.

    34:19-34:20

And then we take it to God.

    34:21-34:25

God only likes me when I'm doing the right thing.

    34:29-34:31

So what do we do with that?

    34:31-34:32

    Well, here's the point, church.

    34:33-34:40

He's talking about people that try to put their conscience to rest by performing for God.

    34:41-34:49

Like I know I'm a sinner, I know I'm guilty, but if I do enough religious activity, surely that makes me right with God.

    34:49-35:01

If I count enough beads, if I burn enough candles, if I volunteer enough at the soup kitchen or sign up for enough committees at church, See God, look at what I'm doing.

    35:03-35:09

And it just takes us to this false mindset that you gotta do slash be good to go to heaven.

    35:10-35:12

But we're left with how much is enough?

    35:13-35:14

    When am I good enough?

    35:15-35:16

What about all the bad stuff that I've done?

    35:17-35:18

And do I need to do more?

    35:19-35:20

And has God happy with what I am doing?

    35:21-35:26

And then I feel so guilty, but I shouldn't feel guilty.

    35:26-35:28

And now I feel guilty about feeling guilty.

    35:29-35:33

And all of that is what he calls dead works.

    35:35-35:37

You see, the problem's not with the works themselves.

    35:38-35:44

You see, the whole tabernacle was a God-ordained place of religious activity.

    35:45-35:47

There are lots of works that took place here.

    35:50-35:54

The problem is doing religion to make God happy.

    35:54-35:55

    That's the problem.

    35:56-36:04

The problem is going after the picture, I got to do these things and it'll make God happy.

    36:04-36:06

And the picture was never designed to do that.

    36:11-36:19

You see his point here in this passage is the ritual had no value in and of itself.

    36:20-36:24

Think of a couple of rituals ordinances that we do in the church.

    36:24-36:27

You realize they have no value in and of themselves.

    36:28-36:29

    Like baptism.

    36:30-36:38

Baptism is a picture, but there's no value in and of baptism, other than what?

    36:39-36:42

You got a second and a half bath.

    36:43-36:46

That's the only physical value of baptism, right?

    36:47-36:50

And communion, what's the physical value of communion?

    36:51-36:55

What, you got like a calorie and a half from the little bread thing.

    36:56-37:03

I guess if you have Rich's loaf, there were more calories with that one, but that's not gonna sustain you long-term, right?

    37:04-37:08

And the little cup isn't gonna quench your thirst, right?

    37:08-37:14

So you can't get caught up in the value of the picture.

    37:16-37:20

It's meant to point to something deeper.

    37:23-37:24

    And that's his point here.

    37:24-37:33

These rituals had meaning in what they stood for, but all of the symbols, so much deeper.

    37:35-37:40

And works-based living never appeases your conscience because it's never enough.

    37:41-37:44

Like if you're living for this, guess what?

    37:44-37:50

You're also gonna be living with a guilty conscience your entire life because you're never going to feel like you have done enough.

    37:52-37:53

    Never enough.

    37:58-37:58

    Can't leave you there.

    37:59-38:02

Number four, how Jesus did do what the old covenant couldn't do.

    38:03-38:06

How Jesus did do what the old covenant couldn't do.

    38:13-38:14

Look at verses 11 through 14.

    38:15-38:30

It says, "But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tents," not made with hands, that is not of this creation.

    38:31-38:44

Look at this, "He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves, but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.

    38:46-39:08

"For if the blood of goats and bulls and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ who through the eternal spirit offered himself without blemish to God." Look, here it is, here it is.

    39:08-39:16

"Purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God." Do you see the contrast?

    39:17-39:19

I know there's a whole lot going on here, but here's the contrast.

    39:20-39:23

Old covenant could do nothing to perfect your conscience.

    39:24-39:28

Jesus Christ came and he perfects your conscience.

    39:28-39:30

He purifies your conscience from dead works.

    39:31-39:42

This is the power of the reality of what Jesus accomplished because the new covenant depends not on the work that you can do, but entirely on the work that Jesus Christ finished.

    39:48-39:50

Okay, I kind of see what you're saying here.

    39:51-39:58

But how, how does that purify my conscience from trying to please God?

    39:58-40:03

How does Jesus keep me from trying to earn God's approval?

    40:04-40:05

    Here it is.

    40:05-40:13

When your conscience is confronted with the value of the blood of Jesus Christ, your conscience has nothing to say.

    40:18-40:23

In other words, when you look at the cross, what do you see?

    40:24-40:28

You see the sinless son of God take your sin on himself.

    40:30-40:33

You see God punishing Jesus Christ for your sin.

    40:34-40:45

You hear Jesus cry out, "It is finished." You know that that curtain has been torn in two, and now you can draw near to God.

    40:49-41:05

You see, the price that was paid for your sin, you consider that it took the blood of the Son of God to pay for my sin, and you realize, when you really get that, you realize this truth.

    41:07-41:09

I got nothing to add to that.

    41:14-41:18

Let me ask you, with what will you supplement the sacrifice of Jesus Christ?

    41:25-41:26

What are you bringing to the table?

    41:28-41:31

What are you adding to Jesus' blood?

    41:34-41:37

You see, then you look at your religious works, right?

    41:38-41:45

You look at your efforts to please God, and you look at your efforts and you're like, you know what I'm doing in thinking that I'm working to please God?

    41:46-41:49

I'm undermining the effectiveness of Jesus' work.

    41:49-41:50

    That's what I'm doing.

    41:50-41:52

I'm saying, Jesus, you didn't do enough.

    41:52-41:56

Despite God's plan, and despite God's promise, you didn't do enough.

    41:57-42:03

So I'm gonna help you out, and I'm going to bring what I can bring to the table.

    42:04-42:05

    It's undermining.

    42:06-42:07

    It's undermining.

    42:08-42:13

You're saying the blood of Christ isn't as powerful as God says it is.

    42:14-42:15

    Do you see?

    42:18-42:19

    Newsflash.

    42:21-42:24

God does not like you better when you serve him.

    42:29-42:31

That's what he's saying here, church.

    42:31-42:31

You have to have that funeral.

    42:33-42:37

Because again, performance-based, performance-based, Every arena of life, let's take it to God.

    42:38-42:43

And we think I had a great day today and I served God in church and I prayed and I did my devotions.

    42:43-42:45

So God must be really happy with me today.

    42:45-42:56

He's not any happier with you than on your worst day because it's not performance-based, it's Christ-based.

    42:58-43:00

That's exactly what he's talking about here.

    43:02-43:02

    God loves you.

    43:02-43:03

Do you know why God loves you?

    43:04-43:05

You know why God loves you?

    43:07-43:09

He loves you because He is love, that's why.

    43:10-43:15

And He accepts you because you believe in Christ.

    43:18-43:20

And you believe what Christ has done for you.

    43:21-43:22

That's why I love this last phrase.

    43:23-43:28

He says, "Purify our conscience from dead works "to serve the living God." Do you see what this means?

    43:34-43:39

Our tendency is to serve God, to appease a guilty conscience.

    43:39-43:40

    That's duty.

    43:41-43:45

I have to do this, I have to do this, I have to do this because...

    43:46-43:47

Yeah, no, no, no, no, we're free from that.

    43:49-43:50

You don't serve God out of duty, you serve him out of delight.

    43:51-43:53

I get to do this, I get to serve him.

    43:53-43:57

It is a joy to be able to partner with God and do his work.

    44:02-44:09

It takes giving from I have to to I get to, right?

    44:10-44:11

    That's how some people give.

    44:12-44:15

Oh, I'm gonna give God his 10%.

    44:15-44:18

And that does nothing for God.

    44:19-44:20

    God loves a cheerful giver.

    44:21-44:22

If you can't give joyfully, don't give anything.

    44:24-44:26

    But it's not obligatory.

    44:27-44:27

    It's not.

    44:27-44:31

It's not like God's gonna be really happy when he sees the size of the check that I wrote him today.

    44:34-44:35

God doesn't love you anymore for that.

    44:38-44:42

Or if for some reason, you're like, I don't really have the faith to write a big one today, I'll write a small one.

    44:44-44:45

Can you write a check for under a dollar?

    44:46-44:47

I'm just gonna write a small one today.

    44:48-44:51

God's not like, well, I'm mad at you now.

    44:52-44:52

    Shame on you.

    44:53-44:54

    I can't believe you.

    44:56-44:57

    He doesn't work that way.

    44:58-45:00

    It's not performance based.

    45:01-45:04

It's based on what Jesus Christ has done.

    45:04-45:06

    That's how he sees you.

    45:06-45:14

And because of that, his eternal love for you and the acceptance that he has for you doesn't change ever.

    45:20-45:23

Do you know who wants you to have a guilty conscience?

    45:23-45:24

    Do you know?

    45:26-45:26

    Satan.

    45:29-45:35

Satan wants you to have a guilty conscience because he knows what a guilty conscience will do to you.

    45:36-45:38

A guilty conscience keeps you from praying as you should.

    45:39-45:47

You're like, you know what, I need to pray, but I kind of feel like a hypocrite praying 'cause I just had a really bad day.

    45:47-45:53

I mean, I lost my temper and I said some non-sermony words that I shouldn't have said.

    45:54-45:57

and I just, I shouldn't even pray today.

    46:00-46:01

    I'm such a hypocrite.

    46:01-46:03

I'm gonna come before God and pray?

    46:04-46:05

    I can't pray.

    46:06-46:07

God knows what a jerk I am.

    46:08-46:12

Yeah, that's from Satan, because God's not mad at you.

    46:14-46:16

If you're in Christ, you're already accepted.

    46:16-46:17

    It's not performance-based.

    46:19-46:20

Satan would wanna keep you from praying.

    46:24-46:27

It keeps you from getting involved in the church like you should.

    46:28-46:37

Like, man, I'd love to get involved in the church, but man, I just don't have my act together and just plagued by this guilt.

    46:40-46:49

A guilty conscience never feels worthy enough to fully draw near to God the way that he provided for you and the way that he wants you to come to him.

    46:50-46:59

So then the guilty conscience thing, if you're in Christ, that's from Satan, the guilty conscience is.

    47:03-47:05

Because it impedes your access to God.

    47:07-47:10

Not on God's part, on your part.

    47:15-47:16

    So that was the introduction.

    47:18-47:18

    Here's the sermon.

    47:19-47:20

This is the point right here.

    47:21-47:23

Listen, when you really, here's what he's saying.

    47:24-47:38

When you really look at the blood of Christ, really look at the blood of Christ, your conscience is forced to say, Jesus really did take away all of my sin and guilt.

    47:38-47:42

I have nothing to add, therefore I can serve God with a clear conscience.

    47:43-47:44

That's what this passage is saying.

    47:47-48:01

Oh, and speaking of Satan, you know, Revelation 12.10 talks about how Satan accuses God's people day and night before God.

    48:03-48:04

    That's Revelation 12.10.

    48:06-48:13

And you're like, you know, here you have this powerful enemy going before God, making all these accusations against you.

    48:13-48:19

How could you possibly understand or possibly I withstand, excuse me, such an onslaught.

    48:19-48:26

'Cause I gotta tell you, I hear people gossip and slander about me here, and I get all bent out of shape about that.

    48:26-48:32

When you're talking about Satan slandering me before the Almighty, like how can I withstand that?

    48:34-48:36

The very next verse tells you.

    48:36-48:37

I love this, look at this, the very next verse.

    48:38-48:46

It says, "As Satan's accusing them before God," it says, "and they have conquered him." Satan, how did they do it?

    48:47-48:47

    How did they do it?

    48:48-48:48

    Say it.

    48:49-48:53

By the blood of the lamb, by the word of their testimony.

    48:54-48:55

    Look at this church.

    48:57-49:00

    We conquer our guilty conscience.

    49:00-49:07

We conquer the accusations of the enemy by the blood of the lamb.

    49:09-49:11

How do you conquer somebody by the blood?

    49:12-49:15

That doesn't mean we take a handful of blood and throw it in Satan's eyes.

    49:16-49:19

It doesn't mean that we're trying to drown Satan in blood.

    49:20-49:26

We conquer by the blood, by believing that the blood of the lamb has made us guiltless before God.

    49:26-49:28

    That's what that means.

    49:28-49:33

It's like, I really don't give a rip what Satan's saying about me because I know what Jesus Christ said about me.

    49:34-49:42

And when the curtain is closed at the end of the day, all that really matters is what he said about me.

    49:44-49:48

That blood has taken away our sin.

    49:50-49:58

And when we truly understand everything that God says that means, that blood's also going to purify our conscience.

    49:59-49:59

    Let's pray.

    50:00-50:08

Father in heaven, I don't even know what else to say.

    50:12-50:35

I'm keenly aware of my sin, the things I say, the things I think, my horrible attitudes, sometimes getting angry over things I shouldn't, speaking out of turn, not trusting you like I should. I could keep going. I'm well aware.

    50:36-50:47

And Father, I'm also well aware that sometimes it's easy for me to shrink back, thinking that, wow, God must be so disappointed in me, God must be so angry with me.

    50:50-50:59

But Father, I thank you for passages like this in your Word that remind me when I'm in my little guilty pity party, that's not from you.

    51:04-51:07

because you have purified my conscience through the blood of your Son.

    51:08-51:40

So Father, I pray for myself and I pray for my brothers and sisters here that we would truly understand as much as we have the capacity to do it, we'd understand the depths in which we are forgiven, in which we are accepted, in which we are free because of the blood of Jesus Christ.

    51:41-51:46

This is a great time of year for us to really change our thinking in this area.

    51:49-51:54

Father, let us serve you in freedom and in joy.

    51:57-51:59

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Open up your Bibles with me. Hebrews chapter 8.

    01:06-01:18

And as we turn there, we are heading to our Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday.

    01:19-01:39

And I just want to encourage you, Harvest family, you know, like Christmas, "Easter is a time when people will come and visit a church "when they might not normally come." So if we're going to be gracious hosts, we're going to accommodate our guests, right?

    01:40-01:43

So here's what we're gonna do, and it's even alliterated for you, all right?

    01:45-01:49

Now this is hard, but the gospel calls us to do hard things, all right?

    01:49-01:51

So first of all, we're going to move up.

    01:51-01:54

And I don't mean like there, I mean up this way, right?

    01:54-01:56

So we're going to move up, all right?

    01:58-02:01

I know like good Baptist, you wanna fill the back first.

    02:02-02:03

    Let's fill the front first.

    02:03-02:07

So we wanna move up and then we want to move in.

    02:08-02:09

    All right?

    02:09-02:12

That way the seats on the aisle are open for our guests.

    02:12-02:12

    Right?

    02:13-02:15

We're doing this to welcome and accommodate our guests.

    02:15-02:19

So we wanna move up and we wanna move in.

    02:19-02:24

And also we want to make friends.

    02:24-02:28

Now, let me tell you something about this.

    02:29-02:33

If you make this hand gesture, you better be a woman.

    02:34-02:35

    (congregation laughing)

    02:37-02:41

And even then, even then it's not great.

    02:42-02:46

But here's the thing, we are redeeming that just for a season.

    02:47-02:51

And after Easter, I don't wanna see anybody doing that, but just for a season.

    02:53-02:55

And we're doing that to get it cemented into our minds.

    02:55-03:00

We wanna move up, we wanna move in, and we wanna make friends.

    03:00-03:03

All right, now I want you all to do that with me with the hand motions.

    03:04-03:05

Don't leave me up here, you ready?

    03:06-03:12

We're going to, say it with me, we're going to move up, we're going to move in, and we're going to make friends.

    03:13-03:15

Some of you still won't do the hard hands.

    03:16-03:17

    I'm not mad at that.

    03:21-03:21

    All right.

    03:23-03:27

Let's just bow our heads and we're going to be turning to God's word.

    03:28-03:38

And if you're visiting with us, we place a premium on God's word around here because God says he works through his word.

    03:39-03:42

He said that his word accomplishes the purposes for which he sends it out.

    03:43-03:47

His word says that faith comes by hearing and hearing through the word of Christ.

    03:47-03:49

So this is a big deal to God.

    03:49-03:51

It should be a big deal to us.

    03:51-03:52

    So we're just gonna stop.

    03:53-03:59

And I want you to please pray for me, to be faithful to communicate the word of God accurately.

    04:00-04:08

And I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive the word of God for what it is, the word of God.

    04:08-04:08

    Let's pray.

    04:15-04:18

And all of God's people said, amen.

    04:20-04:22

    Hebrews 8, are you there?

    04:25-04:38

You know, it happens quite frequently, and it has for years, that Pastor Taylor will randomly send me a text with a "Would you rather?" question.

    04:40-04:43

And I just want you to sort of feel my pain here for a second.

    04:46-04:48

But these are the kinds of things that I'll just randomly get.

    04:49-04:59

He's like, would you rather have a face tattoo of your choosing or a tattoo that can be hidden but is picked by the person who likes you the least?

    05:01-05:02

And see, I always try to get around them.

    05:02-05:04

I'm like, well, what about, and he's like, no, no, just answer the question.

    05:05-05:06

    You have to pick one.

    05:06-05:07

I'm like, well, I don't really want to pick.

    05:07-05:08

He's like, you have to pick one.

    05:09-05:11

All right, so what about you?

    05:12-05:15

Show of hands, who would rather have the face tattoo of your choosing?

    05:17-05:19

Oh, you see, it's not so easy, is it?

    05:20-05:25

Okay, how many people would rather have a tattoo that can be hidden, but it's picked by the person that likes you the least?

    05:26-05:29

Wow, I did not think it was going that way.

    05:30-05:31

    Oh, here's another one.

    05:33-05:40

Would you rather have hiccups all day, every day, or profusely sweat no matter what you do?

    05:42-05:42

    Right?

    05:44-05:44

    (congregation laughing)

    05:47-05:50

    So, show of hands.

    05:51-05:55

How many people would rather have the hiccups all day, every day?

    05:58-06:02

How many people would rather profusely sweat?

    06:05-06:07

Once again, I did not see it going this way.

    06:08-06:09

    (congregation laughing)

    06:12-06:12

    See what I mean?

    06:14-06:17

Okay, here's one for the married people.

    06:20-06:21

Here's one for the married people.

    06:21-06:24

Would you rather smell bad or have your spouse smell bad?

    06:24-06:25

    (congregation laughing)

    06:27-06:33

I am, listen, if you are married, I am begging you not to raise your hand right now.

    06:34-06:35

    (congregation laughing)

    06:35-06:37

    I have lots to do.

    06:37-06:39

I don't have time for more marriage counseling right now.

    06:40-06:40

    Okay?

    06:41-06:44

That's one you think about silently in your head.

    06:44-06:44

    All right?

    06:46-06:50

Oh, here's one that's really easy.

    06:52-06:53

    This one's easy.

    06:53-06:54

Okay, we gave you the hard ones.

    06:54-06:55

    Here's an easy one.

    06:55-07:02

Would you rather hold onto the old covenant or believe Jesus and God's new covenant?

    07:03-07:39

Would you rather hold onto this old covenant that can't save you, wasn't designed to save you, or would you rather believe in Jesus Christ God's new covenant where he takes your sins away and you're adopted as a child of God. That's an easy one, right? But that's where we're going in the book of Hebrews. That's the question that's being presented to the Jews. Why would you hold on to the old covenant, the Mosaic covenant, the Levitical priesthood when the new has come? And just as a quick review, if you're like, man, I feel like I could draw this at this point.

    07:39-07:40

Well, that's kind of the point.

    07:42-07:46

So we've been talking about Abraham, right?

    07:46-07:47

    Remember Abraham?

    07:49-07:51

    Father Abraham and many sons.

    07:53-07:57

And who was the son in question here, the child of the promise?

    07:58-07:58

    What was his name?

    08:00-08:00

    Isaac, right.

    08:00-08:01

Go ahead and shout it out here.

    08:01-08:02

    Help me out.

    08:03-08:12

Isaac and next in this line and under consideration here, Isaac had Jacob, right?

    08:12-08:16

Well, Jacob and Esau, but we're mainly focusing on Jacob here.

    08:16-08:20

And Jacob got into a wrestling match with God, changed his name to Israel.

    08:21-08:22

    The Lord changed his name.

    08:22-08:26

Well, Jacob had a bunch of kids, right?

    08:26-08:30

And they became known as the 12 tribes of Israel.

    08:31-08:35

but the one in particular in question here that we're talking about is who?

    08:35-08:36

Which one have we been talking about?

    08:38-08:38

    Levi, right?

    08:39-08:41

    Not the blue jeans guy.

    08:42-08:48

This is Levi, because from Levi, under the old covenant we've learned, came what?

    08:48-08:50

    All of the priests.

    08:52-08:56

And the very first high priest was who?

    08:57-09:02

Yeah, Aaron was the first high priest, right?

    09:02-09:09

And we talked about how these priests ministered in the temple or the tabernacle.

    09:09-09:17

The tabernacle was just the portable version of the temple before Israel settled into the promised land and built the permanent temple.

    09:17-09:20

But the, I'm gonna make it big.

    09:21-09:22

I made it really small last week.

    09:22-09:23

    I'm sorry about that.

    09:23-09:37

So this is just like a very basic crude sketch here, but in the temple you had courts, but the main structure inside, there was the, well, there's, we had this altar here, but there was the holy place here.

    09:40-09:46

And then you had in here, the Holy of Holies.

    09:47-09:49

And then the Holy of Holies was the Ark of the Covenant.

    09:50-09:52

And this was divided by a thick veil.

    09:53-10:05

Leviticus 16, once a year, the high priest could go in there, sprinkle blood on the mercy seat, and make atonement for the nation of Israel.

    10:05-10:07

    Okay, back to Abraham's day.

    10:08-10:15

Abraham, remember he slaughtered some kings because his nephew got kidnapped and he took exception to that.

    10:15-10:18

So Abraham rallied some troops, slaughtered some kings.

    10:18-10:25

And way back, he met a man named, tell me, Melchizedek.

    10:29-10:32

Mel, well, Mel, what am I doing here?

    10:32-10:33

    What am I doing?

    10:34-10:38

You know, I've written his name like a thousand times and I never do it confidently.

    10:39-10:48

    M-E-L-C-H-I-Z-E-D-E-K-I-Z-E.

    10:48-10:53

    E, K, Melchizedek.

    10:55-10:57

Second place in the fourth grade spelling bee.

    10:57-11:09

All right, so Melchizedek, Abraham met Melchizedek and he was important because we learned that he was both a priest and he was a what?

    11:11-11:12

    And he was a king.

    11:14-11:30

So the Hebrew writer, here's the point, The Hebrew writer in this giant section that we're in, he's saying that the Messiah, Jesus Christ, came in this order of priesthood, not this order of priesthood.

    11:30-11:31

    And that's significant.

    11:32-11:32

    Why?

    11:33-11:38

Because Psalm 110, verse four says, "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.

    11:38-11:48

You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." The Messiah would be in this line, not in this line when it came to his priesthood.

    11:49-11:55

And we saw last week for the Jews, that's hard to change, right?

    11:55-12:02

Because their whole lives, their whole national identity, their whole culture revolves around the temple and the priesthood.

    12:02-12:05

And now Jesus Christ brings in the new covenant.

    12:06-12:08

And it's like, you know, all of this stuff is over.

    12:10-12:11

    We're not offering sacrifices anymore.

    12:12-12:14

We're not going through the priests anymore.

    12:17-12:24

We have a new high priest, we have a new covenant, because God promised us that by the way, in Psalm 110 and verse four.

    12:25-12:38

So in case you still aren't sold, the Jesus priesthood in the order of Melchizedek is greater than the priesthood that came through Levi and Aaron.

    12:38-12:45

If you're still not sold, we get to chapter eight, he says, let's examine what Jesus is doing right now.

    12:46-12:53

because the results of Jesus' work are being eternally ministered to us.

    12:55-13:00

All right, so on your outline, if you're taking notes, which we always encourage, why is Jesus the superior priest?

    13:03-13:04

    Number one, write this down.

    13:05-13:08

Jesus is the superior priest because Jesus made the final sacrifice.

    13:09-13:11

    Jesus made the final sacrifice.

    13:12-13:15

Look at first couple of verses in chapter eight.

    13:17-13:27

He says, "Now the point, and what we are saying is this, "we have such a high priest." What do you mean?

    13:27-13:34

Well, remember before he said, "Jesus allows us to draw near to God." You couldn't do that here, but you could do that through Jesus Christ.

    13:35-14:07

He's like, "We have a high priest like that." He says, "We have such a high priest, "One who is seated at the right hand of the throne "of the majesty in heaven, "a minister in the holy places in the true tent "that the Lord set up, not man." So Jesus made the final sacrifice and the biggest word here that should stand out to us as we study and consider these things, honestly is the word seated.

    14:08-14:12

because in the old covenant, there was a lot of, we're gonna be talking about this down the road.

    14:12-14:21

There were a lot of furnishings and things in the tabernacle in the temple, but something that never existed here were chairs because the priests were never done, right?

    14:21-14:23

You ever have downtime at your job?

    14:24-14:25

We're like, well, I just have some time to do whatever.

    14:25-14:27

Well, the priests never had that.

    14:27-14:29

    They were constantly offering sacrifices.

    14:29-14:30

    They didn't sit down.

    14:30-14:33

They weren't taking any breaks because people kept sinning.

    14:35-14:36

There were no chairs in the temple.

    14:36-14:41

Actually, there was one seat, and that was the mercy seat.

    14:41-14:43

That was the top of the Ark of the Covenant.

    14:43-14:44

    That's where God sat.

    14:45-14:46

So a priest certainly wasn't gonna sit there.

    14:49-14:56

But Jesus, as our high priest, finished his once and for all sacrifice, and he sat down.

    14:58-14:59

He didn't sit down because he was tired.

    15:01-15:03

See, the point here is he sat down because he's done.

    15:04-15:05

    Sacrifice is over.

    15:07-15:08

    He made the final sacrifice.

    15:10-15:13

Secondly, number two, why is Jesus the superior priest?

    15:15-15:17

    Here's something that's mind blowing.

    15:18-15:20

Jesus offers our gifts to the Father.

    15:21-15:23

Look at verses three and four.

    15:24-15:32

It says, "For every high priest is appointed "to offer gifts and sacrifices.

    15:35-15:43

"Thus it is necessary for this priest," that's Jesus, "it is necessary for this priest also "to have something to offer.

    15:45-15:55

"Now, if he were on earth, "he would not be a priest at all, "since there are priests who offer gifts "according to the law." So stop there.

    15:56-15:58

Okay, priests, like we just said, they go to work, right?

    15:59-16:04

And you're like, okay, well, the priest work, the sacrifice is done, we've already established that.

    16:04-16:06

Jesus offered a once and for all sacrifice.

    16:06-16:07

    So that work is done.

    16:08-16:13

And we learned last week that Jesus is making intercession for us, right?

    16:13-16:14

We talked about that last week.

    16:15-16:16

    But what are the gifts?

    16:16-16:22

It says here in verse three that like every priest offers gifts and so our high priest should offer gifts.

    16:24-16:28

Well, when you study your Old Testament, you see there was more than just blood sacrifice.

    16:29-16:33

There would be non-blood sacrifice like the meal offerings.

    16:34-16:39

And you didn't offer those for sin, you offered those to give thanks.

    16:41-16:43

You offered those to give praise.

    16:43-16:46

You offered those to give dedication to God.

    16:48-16:49

    This is mind blowing.

    16:51-17:01

The Hebrew writer is saying that Jesus Christ takes our praise and he takes our thanks and he takes our adoration of God and he offers that to God on our behalf.

    17:02-17:02

    Think about that.

    17:04-17:18

While we stand here and lift up our voices, pouring out our love and appreciation for our Father in heaven, Jesus Christ is taking that praise and saying, here, this is a gift unto you.

    17:18-17:19

We couldn't do that on our own.

    17:21-17:23

    Jesus offers it for us.

    17:24-17:36

And here he tells us, Jesus couldn't do old covenant ministry because he wasn't an earthly priest, because we talked about this, because he wasn't a Levite.

    17:38-17:40

So Jesus couldn't offer those gifts according to the law.

    17:41-17:42

    He wasn't in this line.

    17:45-17:50

But his point here is God doesn't need Jesus to do what the Levitical priests did.

    17:50-17:50

    Why?

    17:51-17:57

because this stuff is just a shadow anyways.

    17:58-17:59

    Look at verse five.

    18:02-18:08

He says, "They serve, these priests, "they serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things.

    18:09-18:40

"For when Moses was about to erect the tent," he's talking about the tabernacle, this, the portable version of this, "When Moses was about to put that tent up, He was instructed by God saying, "See that you make everything according to the pattern "that was shown you on the mountain." Even Moses knew that this was just a shadow, right?

    18:41-18:43

Because the real thing's in heaven.

    18:44-18:49

You realize like a shadow, The shadow really doesn't have any substance, right?

    18:49-18:51

Like see my shadow on here, can you see that?

    18:52-18:53

    I'm not gonna make puppets.

    18:53-18:56

I'm not gonna entertain you, though I could.

    18:56-19:00

I'm not going to, but there's no substance to that shadow.

    19:02-19:03

    You couldn't weigh it.

    19:03-19:06

You couldn't cut it up and divide it.

    19:06-19:07

    You couldn't take it home.

    19:07-19:08

    There's no substance.

    19:08-19:12

The only thing this does is tell me that something real exists.

    19:13-19:14

You see, and that's what he's saying about this.

    19:15-19:18

God instructed Moses, Make sure you make this exactly like I'm telling you.

    19:19-19:19

    Why?

    19:19-19:24

Because this is to be a shadow of the real one that's in heaven.

    19:27-19:38

So Jesus' ministry is in heaven, the real holy place, the real holy of holies, directly offering our praise and thanks to God.

    19:39-19:40

    And that is better.

    19:41-19:46

That is a way better priesthood and a ministry than could ever be done here.

    19:49-19:55

And then finally, number three, why is Jesus the superior priest?

    19:58-20:00

    Because Jesus delivers better promises.

    20:03-20:04

    Look at verse six.

    20:05-20:16

It says, "But as it is, "Christ has obtained a ministry "that is as much more excellent than the old.

    20:17-20:29

"As the covenant, he mediates is better "since it is enacted on better promises." What's he saying?

    20:29-20:45

He's saying because of all that we just said, final sacrifice, seated, offering our gifts to the Father, doing way more than any Levitical priest could do, because of all of this, Jesus has a better ministry, because it's a better covenant, because it's built on better promises.

    20:46-20:46

    Do you see that?

    20:47-21:02

Verse seven, he says, "For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second." Covenant.

    21:03-21:07

A covenant is really a way of saying a promise.

    21:08-21:09

    That's what a covenant is.

    21:09-21:10

    It's a promise.

    21:11-21:17

And he's saying here that in Jesus Christ, God has promised us some things.

    21:17-21:21

He's promised better things than this that came under the old covenant.

    21:27-21:31

But he says the old covenant had some faults.

    21:32-21:33

So we needed a new one.

    21:35-21:51

And I'm sure at this point, A devout Jewish person who heard this would say, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, you need to, I think you need to pump the brakes on that kind of talk." Like, who said the Mosaic covenant had faults?

    21:52-21:56

Who said that this thing that God designed had faults?

    21:56-21:58

Who says that this is lacking?

    22:02-22:05

    God said, that's who said.

    22:06-22:07

    Like, what?

    22:08-22:09

    Excuse me?

    22:10-22:15

And the Hebrew writer here quotes Jeremiah in chapter 31.

    22:16-22:29

And he says, look guys, this whole new covenant, Messiah in the kingly priesthood of Melchizedek, this wasn't some like last minute idea that God came up with.

    22:30-22:34

He's like, I've already showed you from the Psalms, this was always part of God's plan.

    22:35-22:43

He goes, and I'm gonna show you from Jeremiah, you know, one of our favorite prophets, this was always part of God's plan, right?

    22:45-22:49

So five better promises that Jesus delivers in the new covenant.

    22:52-22:55

Five better promises Jesus delivers in the new covenant.

    22:56-22:57

You ready to do some theology?

    23:03-23:04

    One of you.

    23:06-23:09

"Are you ready to do some theology?" Yes, that's what I wanna hear.

    23:10-23:12

    Let's do some theology.

    23:13-23:14

All right, what are the better promises?

    23:15-23:19

Letter A, five better promises that Jesus delivers in the new covenant.

    23:19-23:21

Letter A, it is a new covenant.

    23:23-23:24

Like, wow, Pastor Jeff, that's very profound.

    23:26-23:27

We're going where the text is going.

    23:28-23:33

Look at verse eight, it says, "For he finds fault with them," meaning the people who failed in the first covenant.

    23:34-23:36

"For he finds fault with them when he says, And now he quotes Jeremiah.

    23:37-23:47

"Look, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah." Stop there.

    23:47-23:52

We have to address this because it's a new covenant.

    23:52-24:02

And the word for new in the Greek literally means something that exists now that did not exist before.

    24:02-24:04

That's what that word new means.

    24:04-24:08

You see, sometimes when we use the word new, we say something like, I got a new car.

    24:10-24:14

That's not the way the Greek word is used here because cars already existed.

    24:15-24:17

Maybe you're replacing a car you already had.

    24:18-24:21

Okay, you didn't get something that never existed before.

    24:21-24:22

There's lots of cars out there, have you noticed?

    24:24-24:25

Okay, that's not what that means.

    24:25-24:31

It's new in the sense of, like when television was invented, right?

    24:31-24:42

that we have this new thing that broadcasts programs and has moving pictures and sound in our home when television was a brand new thing.

    24:42-24:44

We didn't have it before, but we have it now.

    24:44-24:46

    It was, television was new.

    24:47-24:50

And you see, that's the sense in which he's using the word new here.

    24:51-24:54

This covenant is, you're like, well, what's the point?

    24:54-24:55

    Here's the point.

    24:56-24:58

    Jesus Christ isn't an add-on.

    24:58-24:59

    That's the point.

    25:00-25:04

It's not like we had this old covenant and then God's like, okay, get my staple gun.

    25:04-25:07

We're just gonna add Jesus to the old covenant.

    25:07-25:08

    Ka-chunk, ka-chunk, ka-chunk.

    25:09-25:10

    And okay, we added him.

    25:11-25:13

No, he's like, this is new.

    25:16-25:18

He says it's with the house of Israel and Judah.

    25:19-25:26

You see, Gentiles are beneficiaries of the covenant, but make no mistake, the covenant is made with Israel.

    25:26-25:29

All right, but it's new, it's new.

    25:30-25:33

Letter B, the new covenant is not conditional.

    25:34-25:36

The new covenant is not conditional.

    25:37-25:38

    Look at verse nine.

    25:40-25:47

Speaking of this new covenant, he says, it's not like the covenant that I made with their fathers.

    25:49-25:52

Okay, he's like the new covenant, not like this one.

    25:53-25:54

    How so?

    25:54-26:08

He says, on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them up out of the land of Egypt, here it is, for they did not continue in my covenant, so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.

    26:11-26:13

The new covenant is not conditional.

    26:15-26:17

See, the old covenant was conditional, it was.

    26:18-26:20

God says, if you do this, then I'll do this.

    26:22-26:27

There was a problem, as the Lord points out here, They did not continue in his covenant.

    26:29-26:30

    Read your Old Testament.

    26:33-26:36

How was Israel in the area of obedience?

    26:37-26:38

    Were they good or bad?

    26:38-26:38

    Tell me.

    26:40-26:41

    Bad, repeatedly.

    26:42-26:44

Worse and worse and worse and worse.

    26:45-26:49

And God would send prophets and God would call them back.

    26:49-26:53

And it was just like more idolatry, more spiritual adultery.

    26:54-26:56

What else besides the Lord can we worship around here?

    26:56-26:59

It just got worse and worse and worse and worse.

    27:03-27:10

And the Lord says here, "So, because they did not continue my covenant," He says, "So I showed no concern for them." Ouch.

    27:12-27:15

"Let the weight of that sink in." God said that, by the way.

    27:17-27:27

"Let the weight of that sink in." What God was saying was, "Oh, oh, you wanna have other gods in your life.

    27:27-27:29

You wanna put something ahead of me.

    27:30-27:32

You wanna worship something else." God says, "Go for it.

    27:32-27:33

    And you know what?

    27:33-27:35

I'm not gonna show you any concern.

    27:36-27:37

    You're on your own.

    27:37-27:44

Go for it." Enjoy the fruit of what that brings.

    27:44-27:47

    It's miserable and it's destructive.

    27:48-27:52

And it never leads anywhere good when you choose to worship something besides God.

    27:52-27:53

But God's like, you know what?

    27:53-27:55

You wanna persist in that, have it.

    27:57-27:57

    Done.

    28:00-28:01

I'm not going to care for you.

    28:02-28:02

    Wow.

    28:06-28:08

But you notice he says the new covenant's not like that one.

    28:12-28:15

That's, I can't even tell you how glorious that is.

    28:16-28:17

The new covenant's not like that one.

    28:18-28:22

See, the new covenant isn't based on our obedience and our righteousness.

    28:24-28:33

The new covenant is based on the obedience and righteousness of Jesus Christ, which he applies to you when you believe in him.

    28:35-28:37

    So it's not conditional.

    28:39-28:43

Five better promises Jesus delivers in the new covenant, letter C.

    28:46-28:48

    The new covenant is internal.

    28:50-28:52

    Internal, look at verse 10.

    28:54-28:55

    First part of verse 10.

    28:56-28:58

This is huge, guys, please tune in.

    28:59-29:07

What I want you to do now is reach over to the person beside you and grab their sleeve and give it a tug and say, "Pay attention." Go ahead.

    29:08-29:09

    Easy, easy.

    29:10-29:12

Some of you are a little too aggressive.

    29:13-29:14

    This is really important.

    29:15-29:16

    Okay, really important.

    29:18-29:19

    Look at verse 10.

    29:20-29:21

Thank you for your help, by the way.

    29:22-29:28

It says, "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel.

    29:29-29:48

After those days, declares the Lord, I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts." I want you right now to underline my laws, underline that, my laws.

    29:52-30:00

Let's talk about the law, because this is something that many Christians do not understand.

    30:03-30:10

And when it comes to the law and the place of the law and the life of a Christian, do you know what it's like?

    30:11-30:13

It's like one of my favorite commercials.

    30:14-30:23

Do you ever see, it was on a few years ago, the Little Caesars commercial, where the guy walks in and he wants his hot and ready pizza or whatever, and they're like, here you go.

    30:23-30:29

And he goes, he's standing there at the counter and he goes, no calling, no waiting.

    30:30-30:32

    There are no rules.

    30:32-30:33

And he whips his shirt off.

    30:34-30:37

And you hear somebody off screen go, put your shirt back on.

    30:37-30:39

And he goes, there's one rule.

    30:39-30:41

and he puts the shirt back on.

    30:42-30:46

And that's how a lot of Christians are when it comes to the law of God.

    30:47-30:49

Some Christians are like, "We're in Jesus Christ.

    30:49-30:53

There's no rules." Like, "Oh, so you can do whatever the heck you wanna do?

    30:53-31:01

Oh, I guess maybe there's some rules and we don't know." We're gonna know today.

    31:05-31:06

    Are we under the law?

    31:07-31:08

    Don't shout out an answer.

    31:08-31:09

I want you to just think about this.

    31:10-31:11

    Are we under the law?

    31:16-31:27

And if you're like, "There's no rules, we're under grace." Then I would say, "Okay, what about the 10 commandments?" You know the 10 commandments, right?

    31:28-31:32

You know, don't have any other gods, don't worship any idols, don't use the Lord's name in vain.

    31:32-31:38

Remember the Sabbath, keep it holy, honor your father and mother, do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, Do not lie and do not covet.

    31:39-31:40

    Those are the 10 commandments.

    31:42-31:43

So what do we do with them?

    31:49-32:02

And some Christians have said, "Well, like the 10 commandments, like we're not under the law, so those don't apply to us at all." Like the 10 commandments don't apply to us at all.

    32:03-32:03

    Okay.

    32:06-32:08

So is it okay for me to murder?

    32:10-32:11

    Like, well, probably not.

    32:13-32:15

Okay, you using the word probably frightens me a bit.

    32:17-32:19

Is it okay for me to commit adultery?

    32:20-32:22

    Well, I guess not.

    32:25-32:25

    Aaron doesn't think so.

    32:27-32:29

Is it okay for me to steal?

    32:31-32:32

Is it okay for me to lie?

    32:34-32:37

Like, well, you know, not really.

    32:38-32:38

    Why not?

    32:40-32:49

If you're saying the law has no place in my life, then why don't I just do whatever I wanna do?

    32:50-32:52

And you're like, because Holy Spirit.

    32:55-32:56

So do I live my life based on feelings?

    32:59-32:59

    That's not smart.

    33:02-33:05

So what place does the law have in the life of the believer?

    33:06-33:09

And some of you, the gears are turning right now.

    33:09-33:15

And for some of you, I guarantee you, you're like, I haven't even thought about the law in a very long time.

    33:15-33:15

    You know why?

    33:15-33:16

    Because nobody talks about it.

    33:17-33:21

Even in modern evangelicalism, how do we share the gospel?

    33:22-33:23

    Believe in Jesus.

    33:23-33:26

    Like, okay, why?

    33:29-33:30

Why should I believe in Jesus?

    33:31-33:32

Because he died on the cross.

    33:32-33:34

Yeah, so did lots of other people.

    33:35-33:37

    What makes Jesus any different?

    33:37-33:38

    What makes him special?

    33:38-33:43

You see, we're missing something, church, when there's no reference to the law that people have violated.

    33:45-33:54

You can't understand how awesome forgiveness is in Jesus Christ unless you understand how horrible of a sinful, rebellious lawbreaker you are.

    33:57-33:59

So let's talk about the law.

    34:00-34:04

Okay, law, when we say law, understand biblically even, it's used different ways.

    34:05-34:08

We sort of use it as a catch all term for the Old Testament.

    34:10-34:11

But there were some components to the law.

    34:11-34:14

One would be like the moral law of God, you could say.

    34:14-34:16

The moral law, that's the one in question today.

    34:17-34:21

The moral law, like the 10 commandments, right?

    34:22-34:23

We're gonna get back to that.

    34:23-34:26

But the other part of the law, that's the ceremonial aspects of the law.

    34:28-34:30

    Those have passed away, right?

    34:30-34:35

Because, you know, the ceremonial aspects of the law, we're dealing with sacrifice, right?

    34:35-34:37

Are there more sacrifices to be made?

    34:37-34:39

No, Jesus made once and for all.

    34:40-34:41

Well, what about the non-blood sacrifices?

    34:41-34:42

    We just covered that.

    34:42-34:47

Jesus is offering our praise to God as our priest on our behalf.

    34:49-34:52

And by the way, those ceremonial aspects, they were for Israel for a season.

    34:53-34:58

Jesus fulfilled all of that with his death on the cross, with His resurrection.

    34:59-35:01

But what about the moral law?

    35:02-35:03

What about like the 10 commandments?

    35:04-35:06

What place do they have in the life of a Christian?

    35:10-35:14

    Well, let's talk about that.

    35:16-35:16

    Isn't that fun?

    35:19-35:20

    Anyway, sorry.

    35:21-35:27

I'm gonna put this here so I don't lose my place 'cause that would be bad for all of us.

    35:27-35:28

    We'll be here till supper.

    35:31-35:32

    That's not gonna do it.

    35:32-35:32

    All right.

    35:37-35:38

    Let's go way back.

    35:40-35:41

Let's go way back to Adam.

    35:42-35:42

    Remember Adam?

    35:44-35:45

    Garden of Eden, Adam.

    35:48-35:55

When man was created, he was created, the Bible says, "In the image of," who?

    35:57-35:58

Yes, right, in the image of God.

    35:59-36:06

So that means Adam, like, the moral law of God would have been on Adam's heart.

    36:07-36:13

That moral law, that would have been on his heart, right?

    36:14-36:18

God told Adam, okay, you can eat off any tree except this one, right?

    36:18-36:25

But Adam didn't have the law written down that he had to reference.

    36:25-36:29

Like, let me make sure that I do all of the things that God says honor him.

    36:29-36:30

    He didn't have that.

    36:31-36:33

He was created in the image of God.

    36:34-36:35

    He was uncorrupted.

    36:35-36:38

That moral law would have been in his heart, right?

    36:40-36:48

So, this moral law is on the heart of man, but after, you know what happened, right?

    36:49-36:49

    We've talked about this.

    36:50-36:52

Adam brought sin into the world.

    36:55-36:56

    And what happened with sin?

    36:58-37:01

The heart of man got corrupted.

    37:01-37:03

So we're just gonna write corrupted here.

    37:11-37:12

The heart of man got corrupted.

    37:12-37:17

Yes, still made in God's image, but now we're broken.

    37:17-37:18

    We're marred by sin.

    37:22-37:28

So we go from Adam's day to Noah's day to Abraham's day, which is on the other side of the board.

    37:28-37:31

And then eventually, what does God do?

    37:31-37:33

We get to the time of Moses.

    37:42-37:51

And the Lord says, "I'm going to write the law again, "but this time I'm going to put the law "on tablets of stone." Right?

    37:55-37:58

We're gonna let that represent the 10 commandments.

    37:59-38:00

    The law.

    38:01-38:03

God says, I'm gonna write it on tablets of stone.

    38:05-38:13

Now you see, this law, this was condemning.

    38:14-38:16

    This was judging.

    38:16-38:21

This was, do not do this, do not do this, do not do this.

    38:21-38:31

And the purpose of this was the Lord was showing Israel, really all of us, but the Lord was showing Israel, this is how sinful you are.

    38:33-38:35

This is how broken you are because of sin.

    38:36-38:37

This is how sinful you are.

    38:37-38:39

That was the purpose of this law.

    38:40-38:43

    Then we're gonna fast forward.

    38:45-38:46

    We're gonna get to Jesus.

    38:51-38:53

And when we get to Jesus, what do we have?

    38:56-39:04

We could say, regarding Jesus and God's law.

    39:10-39:13

You're like, well, Jesus wasn't under the law, right?

    39:15-39:16

    Not exactly.

    39:17-39:18

That's not exactly right, I mean.

    39:23-39:26

Jesus actually is the perfect representation of God's law.

    39:29-39:36

You see, when it comes to honoring God in every way, Jesus is perfect.

    39:39-39:43

The perfect revelation of God's law.

    39:44-39:52

So when Jesus came and he talked about the law, you see, Jesus didn't downplay this.

    39:54-39:59

    He actually elevated this, right?

    39:59-40:04

Like for example, you go through the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 5, 6, 7, over and over, Jesus said something like this.

    40:05-40:18

"You have heard that it was said, "but I say to you, "Did Jesus make this easier or harder?" Shout it out, harder.

    40:20-40:25

For example, Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, "you shall not murder.

    40:28-40:44

"But I say to you, if you're angry with your brother, "have hatred in your heart." He says, "You're guilty of murder." Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, "you shall not commit adultery." And somebody can hear that and be like, well, that's good.

    40:44-40:47

I never messed around on my wife at all.

    40:47-40:54

Jesus says, but I say to you, if you look at a woman with lustful intent, you've committed adultery in your heart.

    40:54-40:55

    You see what Jesus did?

    40:57-41:06

He said, look, as people were trying so hard to focus on the externals, I want to look good.

    41:06-41:08

I want to look good in front of other people.

    41:08-41:12

I wanna check all the boxes on being a good person.

    41:13-41:14

And Jesus goes, no, no, no, no, no.

    41:15-41:17

This was never just about the external.

    41:21-41:22

    It's about the internal.

    41:24-41:26

You see, Jesus was saying the law's about the heart.

    41:27-41:31

It's not just rules on stones for people to reference, to obey.

    41:33-41:34

    Now let's fast forward again.

    41:35-41:42

You see, let's go to, I know, let's go to us right here, sitting right here or streaming right here.

    41:42-41:43

    Let's go to us.

    41:44-41:45

    Here we are.

    41:47-41:58

And we've been studying, you know, we're certainly corrupted by sin, but we're no longer living under the Mosaic law.

    41:59-42:00

    We live under what?

    42:01-42:02

    The new covenant, right?

    42:08-42:10

We live under the new covenant.

    42:17-42:22

And we're like, well, this part didn't really help us very much.

    42:24-42:26

This just showed us how sinful we are.

    42:29-42:37

And if we're gonna be completely honest, Jesus living the perfect life, that doesn't really help me that much because I can't live like Jesus lived.

    42:39-42:41

So us, we're under this new covenant.

    42:42-42:44

And for a lot of Christians, they're like, "Oh, do you know what that means?

    42:46-42:50

"That means all of the law of God "and all of that, that's eradicated.

    42:50-42:58

"We don't live by any of that at all anymore." That's not true.

    43:00-43:01

Like, well, how do you know?

    43:02-43:03

Well, look at verse 10 again.

    43:05-43:06

What did I tell you to underline?

    43:08-43:09

What did I tell you to underline in verse 10?

    43:10-43:11

You didn't do, okay, some of you did.

    43:11-43:12

I was gonna say, you didn't do it.

    43:12-43:13

    I'm gonna start over.

    43:14-43:14

    All right.

    43:16-43:25

Okay, so if God says, I will put my laws into their minds and write them on their hearts, did God say, I will completely eliminate my laws?

    43:25-43:26

    Is that what he said?

    43:27-43:28

    I will eradicate my law.

    43:28-43:31

My law is no longer relevant, meaningful, appropriate.

    43:31-43:32

And is that what he said?

    43:33-43:35

No, that's not what he said.

    43:36-43:36

    Here's what he said.

    43:38-43:40

This is what the new covenant gives us.

    43:48-43:49

This is what we have in the new covenant.

    43:55-44:00

God says that he's going to write his law onto our heart.

    44:02-44:03

    That's the new covenant.

    44:05-44:06

You're like, well, what does that mean?

    44:10-44:12

    That means this, listen closely.

    44:13-44:17

When we receive Jesus Christ, God forgives us of our sin.

    44:17-44:22

He takes away our sin and he transforms us.

    44:23-44:25

    He gives us his life.

    44:25-44:27

He gives us a new heart.

    44:27-44:34

And according to this, he writes his law on our hearts.

    44:36-44:38

    You see, God changes us.

    44:38-44:39

    He changes our appetites.

    44:40-44:46

And we become people who love and delight in the law of God because we want to obey.

    44:47-44:49

We want to obey the law.

    44:50-44:55

See, as Christians, we shouldn't look at the 10 commandments and be like, not for us.

    44:55-44:59

We should look at this and be like, oh, I love that because this tells me the heart of God.

    45:00-45:01

    That's why I love this.

    45:02-45:06

Do you know why the 10 commandments, do you know why the ninth one is don't lie?

    45:06-45:07

Do you know why God gave us that commandment?

    45:08-45:11

Because he's a God of truth and he wants us to reflect that character.

    45:12-45:14

Do you know why God says don't commit adultery?

    45:15-45:21

Because he's a God who is faithful to the covenant and he calls us to reflect his character by doing the same.

    45:22-45:27

So you see part of the transformation isn't hating the law of God.

    45:27-45:29

He wrote it in our hearts.

    45:29-45:30

    We should love that.

    45:33-45:34

    Sin doesn't dominate us anymore.

    45:36-45:39

What dominates us is the law of God.

    45:40-45:44

The moral law of God should be our delight.

    45:44-45:50

And yes, we still sin because we still live in this fallen corrupt flesh, Romans 7.

    45:50-45:51

    That's a whole different sermon.

    45:52-46:01

But even though we sin, if you're a believer in Christ, you love, you love the law of God.

    46:04-46:05

    And that's not my opinion.

    46:08-46:12

That's what God said, because God said, he wrote it on your heart.

    46:14-46:15

    You see that?

    46:17-46:19

Brass tacks, that's an evidence of salvation.

    46:19-46:21

    That's a subjective test.

    46:21-46:23

Do you hunger for the things of God?

    46:24-46:27

Do you love the word of God?

    46:27-46:29

Do you like have this natural love for the word of God?

    46:31-46:32

That's evidence that you have a new heart.

    46:34-46:39

The reason, Christians, the reason you love the word of God is because God wrote this on your heart.

    46:40-46:41

    This resonates with you.

    46:42-46:43

    Like, oh, I love this.

    46:47-46:48

But I'm gonna tell you the opposite is true too.

    46:49-47:04

"The truest expression of your heart is to hate "the law of God, to resist the word of God." If that's your inclination, then you don't love it because it isn't written on your heart.

    47:09-47:22

You see, for Christians, when I stand up and, or Taylor or Rich or whoever stands up here and proclaims the word of God, We know for true born again believers, that's gonna click.

    47:23-47:29

I don't have to talk a believer into applying the word of God, into loving the word of God.

    47:29-47:40

The people that I'm going to have problems with, the people that are resistant to that are the people that haven't received Christ, haven't come into the new covenant, and don't have the law of God written on their hearts.

    47:41-47:42

That's why they're so resistant to it.

    47:45-47:46

    Do you see that?

    47:48-47:50

In the old covenant, everything was external.

    47:52-47:53

    It was on the stones.

    47:54-47:54

    It was ritual.

    47:55-47:57

And the new covenant is internal.

    47:57-47:58

It's the power of the Holy Spirit.

    48:00-48:03

In the old covenant, you obeyed God out of fear.

    48:06-48:10

In the new covenant, with the law written on our hearts, we obey God out of love.

    48:13-48:27

You see, the old covenant, we had these stones that told us to obey, and the new covenant, we're given the desire to obey, and we're given the power to obey, because God's Holy Spirit is in us.

    48:29-48:30

    So that's the point here.

    48:30-48:33

God's saying, this new covenant is internal.

    48:33-48:34

    I'm going to change you.

    48:35-48:38

I'm going to write my law on your hearts and on your minds.

    48:39-48:41

God's Holy Spirit at work within us.

    48:42-48:45

Five better promises Jesus delivers in the new covenant.

    48:45-48:45

    Two more.

    48:47-48:49

Letter D, the new covenant is personal.

    48:50-48:50

    It's personal.

    48:51-48:53

Look at the end of verse 10 and verse 11.

    48:54-48:57

It says, "And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

    48:58-49:17

And they shall not teach each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.' I will be their God, they shall be my people." It says that is deeply personal, that is security, that is a whole nother sermon.

    49:19-49:20

He says they'll all know me.

    49:21-49:22

    See that's huge.

    49:22-49:29

In the Old Testament times, unfortunately a lot of times the truth was really only known by the elite.

    49:30-49:33

You see, they didn't have a stack of Bibles in every home.

    49:35-49:45

Now that the law is written on the heart of the believer, you see, you don't need the Old Testament law to motivate you to obey.

    49:46-49:47

    Now listen, don't misunderstand me.

    49:48-49:55

Don't turn into the Little Caesars commercial and be like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff says we don't need the Bible." No, no, no, no, no, never said that.

    49:56-50:02

Absolutely, it's excellent to read and study the word of God.

    50:02-50:06

And this is where God's revelation is revealed.

    50:06-50:09

We absolutely have to have the word of God.

    50:09-50:10

    Here's what I am saying.

    50:10-50:14

I don't need the old covenant to motivate me.

    50:17-50:21

I have God's spirit that motivates me to righteousness.

    50:23-50:28

And there's nothing more personal than God indwelling in the hearts of his people.

    50:29-50:30

The new covenant is very personal.

    50:32-50:38

And finally, letter E, the new covenant gives total forgiveness.

    50:39-50:44

Look at verse 12, this is one of the greatest verses in the New Testament and obviously the Old Testament too.

    50:45-51:01

But it says regarding this new covenant, it says, "For I will be merciful toward their iniquities and I will remember their sins no more." Wrap your brain around that.

    51:01-51:03

God is willing to forget your sin.

    51:06-51:10

Don't get this faulty notion that God forgets because he's old.

    51:11-51:12

    He's been around a while.

    51:13-51:14

Things are starting to slip his mind.

    51:14-51:15

    That's happening to me.

    51:17-51:18

    That's not happening to God.

    51:19-51:24

God's not forgetting your sin through some weakness on his part.

    51:24-51:26

    He's choosing to not remember.

    51:29-51:35

Look, church, I can stand in front of you and tell you that by far, I am the worst sinner that I know.

    51:37-51:38

    I am.

    51:40-51:40

    You feel that?

    51:42-51:44

And you're like, yes, Pastor Jeff, you're the worst sinner that I know.

    51:46-51:46

    No.

    51:48-51:48

    Do you feel that?

    51:48-51:52

You are the worst sinner that you know, because you know your heart better than anyone.

    51:54-51:55

You know the wicked thoughts that you have.

    51:55-52:05

You know the rebellious garbage attitudes you have, the horrible things that you say, horrible things that you've done, the way you've hurt other people.

    52:06-52:08

I'm keenly aware of my own.

    52:11-52:16

And sometimes even believers think that they're gonna stand before God someday and he's going to chastise them.

    52:17-52:18

    Like, "Get a seat, son.

    52:19-52:21

I'm gonna tell you how horrible you are.

    52:22-52:25

What a terrible life you lived on the earth." I've had people tell me that.

    52:26-52:28

They think that's their idea of standing before God someday.

    52:29-52:37

Like I've had people say, don't stand behind me in line because God's gonna have a lot to, you know, kind of, you know, I'm like, that's just not true.

    52:39-52:41

If the Bible's true, that is.

    52:45-52:49

Because of Jesus, God doesn't remember your sin.

    52:51-53:02

So hypothetically, if you stood before God on that day, if you stood before God and say, God, I messed up so bad, I really hurt these people with this foolish decision that I made.

    53:03-53:18

If you're a follower of Christ, God's gonna say, "I don't remember that." God, you know the struggles that I had with addiction, and there was a season in my life where that addiction was the only thing that mattered to me.

    53:18-53:21

God, you saw how horrible that was.

    53:21-53:33

And if you're in Christ, God's going to say, "I don't remember that either." He is willing to forget your sin.

    53:35-53:41

So it shouldn't be any wonder to you why we're so fired up about Jesus Christ around here, because he accomplished that.

    53:41-53:44

He made that possible through his death on the cross.

    53:50-53:52

We've come this far, might as well finish the chapter, right?

    53:53-54:00

Verse 13 says, "And speaking of a new covenant," okay, he's done quoting Jeremiah.

    54:02-54:05

He says, "And speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete.

    54:05-54:13

And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away." The new covenant is going to make the old covenant obsolete, right?

    54:14-54:17

Obsolete, obsolete, obsolete, like a sundial.

    54:19-54:21

Like a typewriter, like a rotary phone.

    54:22-54:28

All of those things in history had a place and truthfully, they're no longer needed.

    54:31-54:37

With this high priest, Jesus Christ, and all he's done, and all he's doing now.

    54:40-54:42

Why would I need the old covenant?

    54:43-54:47

With everything Jesus delivered, why do I, oh, we're on the wrong side now.

    54:47-54:53

With everything Jesus delivered, Why do I need to go through this system?

    54:56-54:57

    We have better promises.

    54:59-55:01

We have the forgiveness of sin.

    55:02-55:04

    We have total transformation.

    55:07-55:10

Why would I need anything besides Jesus Christ?

    55:11-55:13

You bow your heads with me, please.

    55:16-55:17

As our worship team comes forward.

    55:22-55:25

Father in heaven, we bow ourselves before you.

    55:27-55:33

Father, sometimes it's just, I don't know, foolishness, ignorance, lack of faith, not believing, I don't know.

    55:34-55:50

But sometimes, Father, we think that Jesus is an add-on to the law, or we need to add things to Jesus, And your word makes it so clear that Jesus Christ accomplished everything.

    55:51-55:56

And you have called us to embrace that by faith.

    55:58-56:04

So Father, I pray today for two things.

    56:06-56:09

This was a lot of high level stuff here.

    56:09-56:17

I just pray, Father, first of all, that you would open our hearts and minds to really understand what it is that you're saying here.

    56:18-56:21

And secondly, God, I just pray that you would give us the faith to believe it.

    56:23-56:25

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Hebrews 8:1-13

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. How would you respond to someone who says “We don’t need to obey the 10 Commandments! We are not under the Law because of Jesus!”?

  3. Why do you think many Christians struggle to believe that “God will remember our sins no more” (Heb 8:12)? Why should we have confidence this is true (based on what Jesus did/does as described in this passage)?

  4. Heb 8:13 says the New Covenant makes the Old Covenant obsolete. What, exactly, is obsolete from the Old Covenant?

    Hebrews chapter seven.

    01:04-01:11

Here at Harvest Bible Chapel, we are committed to expository preaching.

    01:11-01:17

And it means going through the word of God and letting the word of God speak for itself.

    01:17-01:23

Okay, we don't spend our time through the week trying to make up what we think you wanna hear.

    01:25-01:29

We just want to do nothing more than represent the word of God.

    01:29-01:34

And this section that we're in right now is advanced stuff.

    01:35-01:38

He gave you a heads up on that back in chapter five.

    01:39-01:45

We're getting into some very technical and very deep, profound truths.

    01:48-01:50

We're gonna do it again today because we are going where the text takes us.

    01:52-01:56

And you might think, well, what is the deal with all this Melchizedek stuff?

    01:58-02:03

Well, that's why the title of this whole sermon series is "Why Jesus," right?

    02:04-02:06

You realize there have been lots of people who have died on crosses.

    02:07-02:09

That was a common form of execution.

    02:11-02:23

But today we are remembering and we are getting into some deep doctrine and discussion and worship and prayer over one man in particular who died on a cross.

    02:23-02:28

You're like, "Well, what's the big deal with him?" Well, that's what we're finding out here in Hebrews.

    02:28-02:29

    Why Jesus?

    02:32-02:34

Why his death and his resurrection mean everything.

    02:35-02:36

Who he is and what he's done.

    02:37-02:43

So this doctrine is so vitally important to our understanding of our Lord.

    02:44-02:52

So to that end, I'd like you to just bow your heads and please pray for me to clearly represent God's word.

    02:53-03:00

I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive this as the Word of God.

    03:00-03:00

    Let's pray.

    03:05-03:08

Father in heaven, and I guess in our theme of thank you, I wanna thank you for your Word.

    03:09-03:13

And I wanna thank you personally that I don't have to try to make up something to tell these people.

    03:14-03:19

You have commanded us to communicate what you have already communicated.

    03:21-03:23

    And your word is glorious.

    03:23-03:32

And Father, you don't need me to sugarcoat it or water it down or apologize for it or dress it up, make it more appealing.

    03:32-03:35

You have just called us to represent it.

    03:36-03:42

And Father, you've promised to do the work through your word.

    03:43-03:47

So again, I thank you ahead of time for what you're going to do.

    03:50-03:52

Through this message, we pray in Jesus' name.

    03:53-03:56

All of God's people said, amen.

    03:59-04:01

We get the whiteboard out again.

    04:03-04:04

Are there like visual people here?

    04:05-04:06

    Is this helpful?

    04:06-04:07

    It helps me.

    04:09-04:12

Even if I'm the only one that helps, you know, maybe it's worth it then.

    04:13-04:23

But just a quick review, because as we're going through the text, he's going even deeper in this doctrine and this theology regarding Melchizedek.

    04:24-04:29

But just as a quick review, last week we went back to the time of Abraham, right?

    04:29-04:35

And before he was Abraham, he was known as, yeah, Abram.

    04:36-04:37

Which one do we wanna use today?

    04:39-04:40

You don't care, okay, I don't need it.

    04:42-04:43

    We'll go with Abraham.

    04:44-04:48

All right, and Father Abraham had many sons.

    04:49-04:51

    Many sons of Father Abraham.

    04:52-05:00

The one of promise was named, I don't have time for that right now.

    05:00-05:01

    All right.

    05:03-05:06

Okay, this is the one we're mainly concerned about today.

    05:06-05:15

All right, Isaac and Isaac, he had a son named, What was the one in particular that we're thinking of?

    05:15-05:17

I know you had Jacob, yeah.

    05:19-05:21

    Yeah, Esau's for another sermon.

    05:21-05:48

All right, so Jacob, and then Jacob wrestled with God, right, and he had a name change, Israel, and that helps us remember Jacob had many sons, and which we know as the 12 tribes of Israel, but one in particular that is pertinent to our discussion regarding Melchizedek is one of Jacob's sons was Levi, right?

    05:49-05:51

Not famous for his genes, that's another Levi.

    05:51-06:00

This Levi, you see under the Mosaic covenant, you had to be a Levite in order to be a priest.

    06:00-06:02

That's just the way it was.

    06:02-06:05

Oh, and by the way, the first high priest, what was his name?

    06:06-06:07

    Aaron, right?

    06:07-06:10

Aaron, that was the first high priest.

    06:12-06:16

I have to differentiate, my wife's name is Aaron, that's a different Aaron here.

    06:16-06:26

But the first high priest was Aaron, all right?

    06:26-06:29

So we're just gonna say he was the first high priest.

    06:29-06:33

All right, so, I'm gonna put him in parentheses there.

    06:34-06:44

So Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Jacob had many sons, 12 tribes of Israel, Levi, that's where the priest came from.

    06:44-06:49

We're just gonna put some priests under here for our visual.

    06:49-06:52

Okay, so the priest, now this is gonna be a very crude drawing here.

    06:53-07:02

Okay, not to scale exactly, but like under the old covenant where these priests ministered was the temple, okay?

    07:02-07:07

in the temple had courts, right?

    07:07-07:15

So these were the courts, but in the temple there was the holy place, and then there was the holy of holies.

    07:15-07:20

And this is just a preview, 'cause we're gonna be talking a lot about this down the road here.

    07:21-07:22

We're gonna say holy of holies.

    07:23-07:34

Okay, and under the old covenant, in the temple, the holy place and the holy of holies was divided by this really thick veil.

    07:35-07:39

And in the Holy of Holies was the Ark of the Covenant.

    07:39-07:43

And the top of the Ark of the Covenant, that's called the mercy seat.

    07:44-07:48

And that is where the unique presence of God dwelt.

    07:48-07:55

So we had this picture in the Old Testament that this is where God's unique presence was.

    07:55-08:06

And the high priest could only go behind the curtain, Leviticus 16, once a year on the day of atonement to offer sacrifice on behalf of the nation.

    08:07-08:09

Oh, okay, there's something else we talked about too.

    08:09-08:14

How about Abraham had a contemporary named Melchizedek.

    08:15-08:16

    Remember his story?

    08:16-08:21

Abraham just got done slaughtering the kings.

    08:21-08:25

And on the way back, he met this guy named Melchizedek.

    08:30-08:32

Melchizedek, did I spell that right, Darla?

    08:32-08:41

Okay, so he met this Melchizedek, and Abraham gave him a tithe of the spoils.

    08:42-08:52

And that was one of the big lessons from last week was because Abraham paid him a tithe, that means like his whole family kind of did because they were still like on the way, right?

    08:52-09:03

And Melchizedek was a really big deal he was not only a priest, but he was also a, he was a king.

    09:04-09:07

All right, that's why Melchizedek is a big deal.

    09:11-09:27

Because you get to a Psalm 110 verse four, speaking of the Messiah, the Messiah is said to be a priest in the order of Melchizedek, not the order of Levi, in the order of Melchizedek, which is priest and king.

    09:28-09:32

So that was basically last week's message.

    09:32-09:38

Jesus Christ, the Messiah would be part of Melchizedek's priesthood.

    09:39-09:41

All right, now we're all caught up.

He has this old, janky, $6 Aldi's radio, and we got him a nice new one, and he does not want to give up the old, even though the new and better has come.

    13:31-13:38

And as we look at the book of Hebrews, you see, for these Jews, their whole lives.

    13:40-13:43

The Mosaic covenant was the thing, right?

    13:44-13:45

    It was ordained by God.

    13:46-13:46

    This is my culture.

    13:47-13:48

    This is my religion.

    13:48-13:50

This is who we are as a Jewish people.

    13:54-13:58

And we get to the message of the New Testament that says that's over now.

    13:59-14:01

    Because there's a new covenant.

    14:02-14:08

because we have a new and better priest that has come in this order.

    14:13-14:15

And changing your mind can be so hard.

    14:17-14:23

And that's really why we have this section here in Hebrews, because this is a radical change.

    14:24-14:31

They go from living under the old covenant with the priests and the temple and all of this to say, no, no, no, new priest has come.

    14:34-14:35

    That's a hard sell, people.

    14:37-14:43

And it's a lot like, and I know some of you will totally get this parallel, it's a lot like Roman Catholicism.

    14:44-14:52

In this area, I have talked to so many Catholics that they've been in that system for decades.

    14:53-15:12

And then they come to understand what the Bible says, and it's just so hard to just be like, okay, done with Catholicism, It's just so hard to change all of a sudden because this has been part of my life and belief and understanding and culture and family my whole life.

    15:12-15:27

And I've dealt with like 80 year Catholics that are like, I see what the Bible says, but it's so hard to, it's just so hard to change your mind when something else is all you've ever known.

    15:29-15:31

Something else is all you've ever believed.

    15:32-15:50

You see in this section of Hebrews, spoiler alert, he's saying, look, this new priesthood thing, it wasn't like God had this idea one morning, like God woke up and he was like, oh, I got an idea, since this ain't working, we're gonna change a little.

    15:51-15:55

The point in this section is he's saying this was always part of God's plan.

    15:56-16:10

God had this new priesthood and this new covenant planned even while this one, even before this one, but even while this one was happening, God always had this one in mind, right?

    16:11-16:19

And key verse here again, Psalm 110, verse four, such a little verse in the Old Testament, but one of the most important verses.

    16:22-16:25

"The Lord has sworn," this is speaking of the Messiah.

    16:26-16:29

This is God speaking of the Messiah.

    16:29-16:32

It says, "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.

    16:33-16:48

You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek." God never intended this to be forever.

    16:48-16:50

    He never intended that.

    16:51-16:58

He always intended the Levitical priesthood to be replaced by Melchizedek's priesthood.

    16:59-17:04

Again, how can you show them that it's changed?

    17:05-17:12

How can you convince somebody that the new and better has come and it's time to set this one aside?

    17:13-17:20

Well, what he does in this section is show that this system was imperfect.

    17:22-17:24

    Again, by design, it was.

    17:24-17:37

It was always meant to be replaced because, catch this, the reason this was imperfect was this couldn't bring us to God.

    17:39-17:40

    That's the thing.

    17:42-17:46

The Levitical priesthood, the Mosaic covenant, it could not bring us to God.

    17:46-17:48

You're gonna see that twice in this section.

    17:48-17:51

Just note this, verse 19 and verse 25.

    17:52-17:53

    (congregation laughing)

    17:56-17:59

Talks about drawing near to God.

    17:59-18:01

That was something not possible under the old covenant.

    18:09-18:29

And you know, I think, I think speaking a message like this to a church like this can be sort of like rolling a boulder uphill in a lot of ways, because we're kind of used to the concept of drawing near to God.

    18:30-18:34

And I think because we're so used to it, I think we kind of take it for granted, right?

    18:35-18:44

I mean, we can stop and pray and have audience with God fully at any time.

    18:46-18:48

    No sin to hinder us.

    18:48-18:50

    No wall, no veil.

    18:51-18:53

We can boldly come before the throne of grace.

    18:57-19:01

And can we just stop for a second and recognize what an audacious concept that is?

    19:03-19:19

That the God of the universe who created all of this, who dwells on high, and who is holy, and beyond compare with anyone and anything that you know, That God cares so much about you that He wants you to draw near to Him.

    19:20-19:23

He wants you to come and talk to Him.

    19:24-19:26

    That is an audacious concept.

    19:27-19:29

Why would He give a rip about me?

    19:32-19:39

He loves me with an everlasting love, and He wants us to draw near.

    19:41-19:45

So it's an audacious concept, Drawing near to God.

    19:46-19:51

That's what we're looking at in the text after what could be the fourth longest introduction in the history of sermons.

    19:53-19:55

Why are you able, I have the other three by the way.

    19:56-19:59

Why are you able to draw near to God through Jesus?

    19:59-20:06

That's this section like, okay, I can come near to God because of this Messiah in the order of Melchizedek.

    20:07-20:08

    Why is that possible?

    20:12-20:15

Well, here it is, number one, because you have the right priest.

    20:17-20:17

    That's why.

    20:19-20:20

    All right, you ready?

    20:21-20:22

    We're gonna do some theology.

    20:26-20:26

    Look at verse 11.

    20:27-20:54

It says, "Now if perfection had been attainable "through the Levitical priesthood, "for under it the people received the law, "what further need would there have been "for another priest to arise "after the order of Melchizedek, "rather than the one named after the order of Aaron." So you see, in light of Psalm 110, verse four, he asks a rhetorical question.

    20:58-21:07

Basically he's saying this, "Look, if the Messiah was promised "to belong to a different priesthood, "then the Levitical priesthood, including Aaron, "must be imperfect.

    21:08-21:12

"Otherwise it wouldn't need to change, right?" That's pretty, it's pretty logical, right?

    21:13-21:20

In other words, if this was doing everything that God wanted for man, God never would have promised this, right?

    21:23-21:24

    That's his reasoning.

    21:26-21:42

Excuse me, verse 12 says, "For when there is a change in the priesthood, "there is necessarily a change in the law as well." Understand the Greek word for change literally means one in place of another.

    21:42-21:46

In other words, Jesus and the new covenant isn't an add-on.

    21:47-21:53

Like we have all this and now Jesus has come and let's just sort of tack Jesus onto this.

    21:54-21:56

    It means literally to replace.

    21:59-22:01

There's a whole new law, so to speak.

    22:02-22:15

Verse 13 says, "For the one of whom these things are spoken," that's Jesus, Messiah, belong to another tribe from which no one has ever served at the altar.

    22:17-22:19

Which tribe serves at the altar again?

    22:20-22:21

    Levi, right?

    22:24-22:33

Look at verse 14, he says, "For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah." And in connection with that tribe, Moses said nothing about priests.

    22:35-22:40

So you see the Messiah, Jesus Christ in the flesh was not from Levi.

    22:41-22:42

He was from the tribe of Judah.

    22:43-22:49

And Genesis 49 prophesied that the Messiah would be from the tribe of Judah.

    22:51-22:53

All right, he goes on, look at verse 15.

    22:55-23:14

He says, "This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, who has become a priest, not on the basis of legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life.

    23:17-23:19

What he's saying here is this, just simply this.

    23:20-23:27

The Levitical priesthood only had physical requirements.

    23:29-23:35

You see, to be a Levitical priest, There was no spiritual requirement necessary.

    23:36-23:44

There was no like spiritual test, leadership test, some kind of like personality assessment.

    23:45-23:53

There was really only one requirement to be a priest under the old covenant, and that was you had to be a Levite.

    23:55-24:01

There were also, even if you were a Levite, there were physical blemishes that could disqualify you.

    24:01-24:09

I read this week, there were like 142 physical blemishes that even if you were a Levite, they would disqualify you.

    24:09-24:13

Just write down Leviticus 21, some of them are listed there.

    24:15-24:28

But his point here is to be a priest under the old covenant, only physical requirement, but Jesus was appointed priest, not because of his pedigree, but because of his power.

    24:30-24:36

He says, you know, like Melchizedek, Jesus Christ the Messiah, he didn't meet physical requirements to be priest.

    24:38-24:42

    His was entirely through power.

    24:45-24:46

Look at verses 18 and 19.

    24:48-24:53

It says, "For on one hand," did we read verse 17?

    24:53-24:55

We're gonna read it again, just in case I miss it.

    24:55-25:02

"For it is witnessed of him, you are a priest forever, "after the order of Melchizedek." Again, that's Psalm 110, verse four.

    25:02-25:14

Verse 18, "For on the one hand, "a former commandment is set aside "because of its weakness and uselessness, "for the law made nothing perfect.

    25:16-25:29

"But on the other hand, a better hope is introduced "through which we," here it is, "draw near to God." He's saying the law made nothing perfect.

    25:30-25:34

And you're like, well, then why did God institute the law if it didn't make you perfect?

    25:35-25:40

Because God's intention was always to save us through the death of his son.

    25:41-25:43

If we can be saved through this, we don't need Jesus, do we?

    25:45-25:47

This was to show us our need.

    25:48-25:55

This was to show us why the Messiah sacrificed himself and rose from the dead, why he is high priest and lamb.

    25:55-25:58

This was to teach us, but this was never meant to save anybody.

    25:59-26:09

Oh, and by the way, you couldn't be saved by keeping the law anyways, because you can't keep the law.

    26:11-26:17

So hypothetically, if this could save you, none of us would be saved.

    26:21-26:41

Like if I said, let's just boil this down to like the most kind of basic elementary terminology to say these things, that if somebody says to you, "How do I get to heaven?" What is the usual secular answer to that?

    26:42-26:44

You have to be a good person, right?

    26:45-26:46

    Isn't that what people say?

    26:47-26:49

You have to be a good person, that's how you go to heaven.

    26:50-26:51

    Oh, there's a problem.

    26:53-26:54

    None of us are good.

    26:58-27:02

And the law, even with the sacrifices, could not make you right before God.

    27:02-27:06

You're like, "Well, how do you know that?" Because of this veil.

    27:07-27:08

    That's how I know that.

    27:09-27:15

Because you see, under the law, God was separated from the people.

    27:15-27:22

The law couldn't get you into the holy of holies, because we always had sin that needed atone for.

    27:26-28:01

And his point here is since the Levitical priesthood could not get you into the Holy of Holies, which is where God actually wants you, but your sin keeps you there, and this doesn't take care of that, God says, "No, we're setting that aside because this is the plan to get you here." The Messiah brings you into the presence of God. That's Because when he died, the Bible tells us that the veil and the temple tore, showing us that through Jesus Christ, we can truly draw near to God.

    28:03-28:05

So you're like, well, how do I get here?

    28:05-28:06

How do I get into the Holy of Holies?

    28:06-28:07

How do I draw near to God?

    28:09-28:11

His first point is, you gotta have the right priest.

    28:13-28:15

The one after the order of Melchizedek, right?

    28:16-28:18

Number two, why are you able to draw near to God through Jesus?

    28:19-28:21

Number two, because you have God's oath.

    28:22-28:23

    Because you have God's oath.

    28:25-28:26

    Look at verse 20.

    28:29-28:32

He says, "And it was not without an oath.

    28:33-28:39

For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath.

    28:40-28:52

But this one, the Messiah, was made a priest with an oath The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind.

    28:53-28:55

    You are a priest forever.

    28:56-29:01

This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

    29:05-29:12

Sum that up, he's saying the new covenant is better because Jesus was made priest by God's oath.

    29:16-29:22

He's saying, look, God never made a promise that their priesthood would last forever.

    29:23-29:25

He never said that, God never made that promise.

    29:25-29:36

He goes, but God did make a promise to the Messiah that this priesthood would be forever in the order of Melchizedek.

    29:37-29:42

That's why Psalm 110, verse four is such a significant and weighty verse in the Bible.

    29:46-29:50

You know, Pastor Taylor talked about this a few weeks ago of God taking an oath.

    29:51-29:54

And just a quick review about that.

    29:54-29:56

You know, it's pretty significant when God takes an oath.

    29:57-29:58

You know why that's pretty significant?

    29:59-30:01

Because God doesn't have to, right?

    30:03-30:05

First of all, he's God, he can do whatever he wants.

    30:05-30:10

And second of all, isn't the word of God, isn't God's word just good in any case?

    30:11-30:19

Do you only believe God if he says, "I swear, promise, pinky swear that I'm gonna do this." Like you don't believe God unless he says that?

    30:20-30:22

    Like that's foolishness, isn't it?

    30:24-30:26

God takes an oath, he does it for us.

    30:28-30:36

It stresses the importance of the promise, but another thing is it gives us confidence that God says something and we're like, really?

    30:36-30:40

And God's like, yes, take this to the bank.

    30:40-30:42

I'm making an oath to the Messiah.

    30:43-30:47

You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.

    30:49-30:51

Like, oh God, you sound serious.

    30:52-30:53

    He is.

    30:56-31:07

And you see that's comforting because when it comes to our salvation, church, your salvation is based on God's integrity.

    31:09-31:12

That's why trusting and believing his word is so important.

    31:13-31:15

that God stands by what He says.

    31:16-31:22

Like I can stand before you today and I can say to you confidently, I know that I'm saved.

    31:23-31:27

And I know as soon as I say that, there's somebody that's sitting there going, oh, that's awfully arrogant.

    31:30-31:34

Yes, it would be arrogant if that had anything to do with me.

    31:36-31:37

    But you see, it doesn't.

    31:38-31:41

I can say that I know that I'm saved not because of what I've done.

    31:42-31:46

I know that I'm saved because of what Jesus Christ has done on my behalf.

    31:48-31:54

And listen, your salvation is based on taking God and his word.

    31:55-32:00

God says, if you believe in my son and receive him, you will be saved.

    32:02-32:07

I believe in Jesus Christ and received him, therefore I'm what I'm saved.

    32:07-32:09

That's based on God's word, not mine, right?

    32:10-32:11

And see, that's where my confidence comes.

    32:12-32:14

It's just taking God at his word.

    32:16-32:20

You know, it's like Aaron and I met with the Roths who just joined the church today.

    32:20-32:21

    Everybody say hi, Roths.

    32:23-32:25

I said I was gonna put you on the spot.

    32:25-32:26

I told you that in the membership interview.

    32:27-32:27

    You believe me.

    32:29-32:32

But anyways, they wanted to talk about the church and we just wanted to get to know them a little bit.

    32:34-32:39

But I said, hey, let's meet at four while our kids are in youth group, we'll meet at four.

    32:41-32:46

And Jason said, "I'll bring coffee." And guess what happened at four o'clock on Sunday?

    32:47-32:53

He showed up here, took the kids to youth group, and he had coffee.

    32:55-32:57

Now, what made them show up?

    32:58-33:04

Just me saying, "I'll be there." And they believed me, right?

    33:05-33:10

They're like, "Well, how do you know they believed you?" Because they brought coffee for all of us.

    33:11-33:14

I mean, if they didn't really believe us, they had four coffees to drink, right?

    33:15-33:19

But like, you see my point?

    33:22-33:23

    That's what faith is.

    33:24-33:28

Faith is hearing and believing and acting upon it because you believe it.

    33:29-33:35

They heard, I said, I'm gonna be here at four, and they showed up with the coffee showing that they acted on what they believed was true.

    33:36-33:41

And that, at the very base level, is how faith works.

    33:44-33:46

    But you see, I'm nothing.

    33:50-33:59

And who knows if I would have been in an accident or gotten sick or somebody in my family needed me and I had to bail at the last minute and I wasn't able to keep my word.

    34:00-34:02

But you see, God isn't so restricted.

    34:03-34:07

When God makes a promise, He keeps His word.

    34:11-34:12

And God made you a promise.

    34:14-34:19

God says, if you believe in Jesus Christ, this priest after the order of Melchizedek, you will be saved.

    34:22-34:24

And your salvation is based on God's integrity.

    34:26-34:27

    Do you really believe Him?

    34:32-34:51

You're like, "Well, how do I know this is not gonna change?" Because it says, "The Lord has sworn." Like, "Well, I hear what you're saying, Pastor Jeff, he's a priest forever, God swore that, but what if God changes his mind?" What does the verse say?

    34:52-34:58

"The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind." How much more clear can God make it?

    35:01-35:05

I can draw near to God because he promised I can through Jesus Christ.

    35:05-35:08

My salvation is based on his integrity, not mine.

    35:09-35:09

    You see?

    35:10-35:15

So that is how I'm able to draw near to God through Jesus.

    35:15-35:19

Not by my works, but by trusting his.

    35:21-35:22

    All right, number three.

    35:25-35:27

Where are you able to draw near to God through Jesus?

    35:28-35:29

Well, you gotta have the right priest, right?

    35:31-35:34

You have that, and you have God's oath.

    35:34-35:37

Number three is because you have Jesus making intercession for you.

    35:41-35:45

I could spend about six weeks just on this little chunk right here.

    35:45-35:48

Don't worry, I'm not going to, but wow.

    35:50-35:58

He says the former priests were many in number because they were prevented by death from continuing in office.

    36:00-36:04

But he holds his priesthood permanently because he continues forever.

    36:05-36:12

Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him.

    36:12-36:13

    Oh, there it is again.

    36:13-36:15

Draw near to God through him.

    36:16-36:20

Look, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

    36:22-36:26

The Levitical priesthood could not save to the uttermost.

    36:27-36:27

    Why?

    36:28-36:30

    Just simply, they died.

    36:31-36:36

I read this week, there were like 83 high priests from Aaron until 70 AD.

    36:40-36:41

None of them stuck around forever.

    36:41-36:45

They all died, but Jesus Christ continues forever.

    36:45-36:48

He'll never be succeeded by another.

    36:49-36:57

But I love this, it says, "He is able to save to the uttermost." Let's just think about that concept for a second.

    36:58-37:00

    saved to the uttermost.

    37:00-37:09

That means in regards to salvation, Jesus takes us as far as salvation can possibly go.

    37:10-37:11

    And that is awesome.

    37:15-37:18

I was gonna say, I can't even tell you how awesome that is, but I'm gonna take a swing at it.

    37:21-37:24

Like his salvation kept us from hell, right?

    37:25-37:33

And if you stop and really consider we deserve is to experience God's wrath for our sin for all of eternity.

    37:34-37:35

    That's what we deserve.

    37:35-37:37

And he delivered us from that.

    37:39-37:40

    That's awesome.

    37:43-37:45

But even that's not as far as he went.

    37:45-37:49

He didn't just remove us from hell, he took us to heaven.

    37:52-37:58

Saved us from the worst to give us the absolute best because he saves to the uttermost.

    38:02-38:05

You see, in Christ, we are pronounced not guilty.

    38:08-38:10

And boy, that should be a load off your mind, right?

    38:11-38:18

When we consider how wickedly sinful we are, I'm the worst sinner that I know by far, and you are too.

    38:20-38:26

But when you consider how horrible your sin is, and because of Jesus Christ, God says, Okay, you know what?

    38:26-38:27

You're not guilty of your sin.

    38:29-38:30

    That's awesome.

    38:31-38:33

But you realize he doesn't stop there.

    38:34-38:39

He not only takes our guilt away, but he gives us the righteousness of himself.

    38:40-38:45

That when God sees us in Christ, he sees us as righteous as he is because of Jesus.

    38:47-38:49

What is the second Corinthians 521?

    38:49-38:53

So that we might become the righteousness of God.

    38:54-38:57

to the uttermost, to the uttermost.

    39:00-39:04

The Bible says in Christ, we are no longer enemies of God.

    39:05-39:05

    Wow.

    39:07-39:08

That we were enemies of God.

    39:09-39:10

    God says, you know what?

    39:10-39:11

    We're not enemies anymore.

    39:11-39:15

That would have been enough for God to be like, okay, we're not enemies.

    39:16-39:17

Go your way, I'll go my way.

    39:18-39:20

Like, I'm so glad he's not mad at me.

    39:22-39:23

But he goes to the uttermost.

    39:24-39:26

So he not only says you're not enemy, what does he do?

    39:27-39:32

He adopts us as his children because he saves to the uttermost.

    39:32-39:36

He takes us as far as salvation can go.

    39:39-39:48

And you know, I was thinking this week, to the uttermost, you know, what is his salvation lacking?

    39:50-40:03

I was thinking, boy, if I could, If God had a suggestion box, what would I possibly add to what he's accomplished in Christ?

    40:04-40:05

    What do you think?

    40:06-40:07

Go ahead and shout it out.

    40:08-40:10

    This is audience participation time.

    40:11-40:20

What would you add to what Jesus Christ has accomplished to make it better?

    40:21-40:25

Can you think of anything, anything at all?

    40:26-40:30

Come on, clean slate, anything at all that would make it better?

    40:36-40:37

    Anything at all?

    40:41-40:43

It sounds like you came up with the same thing that I did.

    40:44-40:45

    I couldn't think of a thing.

    40:48-40:50

I couldn't think of one thing to make salvation better.

    40:54-40:59

And that's what this means when it says, He saves us to the uttermost.

    41:00-41:06

As far as salvation can go, He takes us there.

    41:10-41:11

And I thought, you know, why?

    41:13-41:28

And if you're sitting here listening to this and you haven't received Christ, and you're here for whatever reason, your family dragged you, or you're appeasing your wife, or whatever, I would just ask you, why wouldn't you receive him?

    41:32-41:38

What have you found in your life that has brought you joy and peace and blessing?

    41:44-41:48

And I have to ask you, who or what has promised you more than Jesus?

    41:53-41:55

So how does he save to the uttermost?

    41:55-41:56

    How does he do that?

    41:56-41:59

Well, he tells us right here, it's because he always lives to make intercession.

    42:01-42:03

He always lives to make intercession.

    42:05-42:10

In other words, Jesus is praying for you, and I guarantee he never lies about that.

    42:13-42:17

Like, Jesus, I'm really struggling right now, and he's like, I'll pray for you, and then he forgets, that doesn't happen.

    42:19-42:20

    It doesn't happen.

    42:21-42:22

    Do you see that?

    42:22-42:41

It says, the end of what, verse 25, "Since he always lives to make intercession for them." Jesus is literally beside the Father, always speaking on your behalf.

    42:43-42:44

Can you wrap your brain around that?

    42:47-42:54

Jesus is always beside his Father and he's on your side and he's making intercession for you.

    42:55-43:00

And you know, the Bible says what Revelation 12, that Satan is the accuser of the brethren.

    43:02-43:04

And we learned some things from Job, don't we?

    43:04-43:07

    That Satan, he's an accuser.

    43:08-43:09

    You see this picture?

    43:09-43:15

That Satan goes before God and Satan's like, she's no good.

    43:16-43:18

God, I don't know why you waste your time with her 'cause she's rotten.

    43:19-43:21

And look at her, look at her track record.

    43:22-43:24

And the Bible says Jesus is making intercession.

    43:25-43:26

He's right there going, yeah, I died for her.

    43:28-43:29

    She believes my promise.

    43:31-43:33

And God, according to your word, she's a child.

    43:34-43:34

    She's your daughter.

    43:36-43:39

And I pronounced her righteous because she believed in me.

    43:39-43:42

Jesus is making intercession for you.

    43:44-43:48

And I gotta tell you, if you have Jesus doing that, you can be sure that you can draw near to God.

    43:50-43:54

And then finally, because all the work is done.

    43:56-43:58

Why are you able to draw near to God through Jesus?

    43:59-44:00

Because all the work is done.

    44:03-44:12

And I'm just gonna go through this quickly because we are going to be saying a whole lot about this over the coming weeks, especially over Good Friday, Resurrection Sunday.

    44:13-44:15

Look at verses 26 through 28.

    44:16-44:31

It says, "For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens.

    44:32-44:50

He has no need like those high priests," Levitical ones, "to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, And then for those of the people, since he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.

    44:52-45:04

For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a son who has been made perfect forever.

    45:06-45:07

    See that reasoning?

    45:08-45:13

He goes, the oath, the promise to Melchizedek, Psalm 110 verse four, that came after the law, right?

    45:17-45:33

And here's the thing, because all the work is done, he just sums it up here, he puts a bow on this doctrine, and he's like, look, Jesus Christ is perfect in person, he's perfect in his work, he's perfect in his appointment as high priest.

    45:35-45:40

He's not like Aaron, he's not like the Levitical priest, Jesus Christ was inherently perfect.

    45:42-45:46

So he didn't need to sacrifice for himself like the Levitical priests had to.

    45:49-45:51

Also, he didn't have to repeat his.

    45:55-46:00

And again, we're gonna be spending several weeks just on this concept, but you're gonna wanna underline it in your Bible for now.

    46:01-46:02

    This is just a taste.

    46:03-46:04

    Once for all.

    46:05-46:07

Once for all, that's gonna be our theme over Easter.

    46:07-46:09

    once for all.

    46:09-46:13

Do you realize the sacrifice of Jesus Christ is eternally contemporary?

    46:15-46:17

    It's eternally contemporary.

    46:20-46:22

    Meaning it's always significant.

    46:23-46:25

    And don't misunderstand me.

    46:25-46:36

The sacrifice of Jesus happened at a point in time, yes, but it is relevant and effective and powerful at the same time all the time.

    46:39-46:43

Like that old hymn about the blood never loses its power, right?

    46:44-46:53

The same power that saved the Apostle Paul can save somebody who gives their life to Jesus today.

    46:53-46:59

Same gospel, same blood, same power, eternally contemporary, never needs repeated.

    47:00-47:02

So much more down the road on this.

    47:03-47:05

But here's what I want to tell you today.

    47:05-47:16

When it comes to having direct access to God, the ability to draw near to God, to get into the holy of holies before God, there's nothing else that needs to be done.

    47:17-47:21

Because Jesus Christ truly did it all when He sacrificed Himself.

    47:25-47:30

So that was the real introduction.

    47:30-47:31

    Here's the real sermon.

    47:33-47:35

Why are we so hesitant to pray?

    47:37-47:44

You know, I talk to Christians even until today that worry that God is mad at me.

    47:47-47:49

You know, God must really be ashamed of me.

    47:52-47:58

You know, it's hard to pray because sometimes I start to pray and I realize God's probably disappointed in me.

    47:58-48:00

    Didn't have a great week.

    48:00-48:01

    Didn't have a great month.

    48:02-48:05

And in fact, all of 2022 wasn't great for me.

    48:07-48:08

And God must be so embarrassed.

    48:09-48:17

And when I get before him to pray, God's probably just got his hands on his hips, like, "Oh, the nerve of you coming to me to pray." Like, that's how we feel.

    48:21-48:24

You know what, I gotta work and sort of earn my way.

    48:24-48:27

And maybe if I perform better, God's going to be happy.

    48:27-48:32

or if I do the right religious acts, I'll have good standing with him.

    48:34-48:47

That mindset undermines everything that God's word says about Jesus Christ and all that he's done.

    48:50-48:53

And that's his point here, through Jesus, we draw near to God.

    48:55-48:58

And the question I wanna leave you with today is just simply this.

    48:59-49:02

Are you taking him up on his invitation to come near?

    49:04-49:05

Are you taking him up on that?

    49:11-49:13

Because here's a great opportunity for you.

    49:15-49:22

Wednesday night, right here, 6 p.m., we're going to be praying.

    49:25-49:29

Do you believe that prayer works?

    49:31-49:35

Do you believe that we can draw near to God and we have access to God's presence through Jesus Christ?

    49:35-49:36

    Do you believe that?

    49:39-49:43

Do you believe that God hears our prayers and he moves when we pray?

    49:44-49:45

    Do you believe that?

    49:47-49:47

    Great.

    49:48-49:49

I'll see you at six on Wednesday.

    49:50-49:51

    All right, let's pray now.

    49:53-49:59

As our worship team comes forward, Father in heaven, I don't know what to say.

    50:01-50:08

I guess I'm just kind of hung up on the saved of the uttermost thing that I realized that I don't deserve anything.

    50:09-50:15

And even if you said I'm not guilty and kept me from going to hell, I should be eternally grateful for that.

    50:17-50:18

But you have done so much more.

    50:19-50:28

You have saved us to the uttermost through the death of your son, through him sacrificing himself, we can actually come into your presence.

    50:29-50:31

Why, oh why do we not take advantage of that invitation?

    50:34-50:45

But Father, I pray that as we really try to wrap our hearts and minds around this theology, this isn't just a head knowledge.

    50:46-50:48

Father, this is so we can understand.

    50:48-51:01

We can confidently come before you because it's not based on who we are It's not based on what we've done, it's based on who Jesus is, it's based on what He's done, so we can draw near to you.

    51:02-51:08

So Father, we come before you at your invitation and through your provision.

    51:10-51:18

We come and we thank you for saving us to the uttermost.

    51:19-51:21

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Hebrews 7:11-28

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What exactly does it mean to “draw near to God” (Heb 7:19, 25)? Why wasn’t this possible under the Mosaic (Old) Covenant? How does Jesus make this a reality?

  3. Jesus always lives to make intercession (Heb 7:25). Explain, in your own words, what that means.

Why Jesus? Because He is King and Priest – Both!

Introduction:

Genesis 14:17-20

Psalm 110:4 - The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, "“"You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."

How Is Melchizedek's Priesthood > Levitical Priesthood? (Hebrews 7:1-10):

  1. Levitical priesthood was for Israel / Melchizedek's priesthood was for Everyone . (Heb 7:1-2a)

1 John 2:2 - He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.

John 1:29 - The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!..."

  2. Levitical priests could never be King / Melchizedek was Priest and King . (Heb 7:2b)
  3. Levitical priesthood was Hereditary / Melchizedek's priesthood was Personal . (Heb 7:3a)
  4. Levitical priesthood was Limited in Time / Melchizedek's priesthood never Expired . (Heb 7:3b)
  5. The levitical priesthood Paid Tithes to Melchizedek. (Heb 7:4-10)

Luke 6:46 - Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?

Hebrews chapter seven in your Bibles, if you would open up there, please.

    01:04-01:09

And if you're new around here, you might be asking, what kind of a church is this?

    01:09-01:12

Well, we are a church that sits on four pillars.

    01:13-01:15

We proclaim the authority of God's word without apology.

    01:16-01:18

We believe firmly in the power of prayer.

    01:19-01:24

We lift high the name of Jesus in worship, and we share the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    01:24-01:25

    That's who we are.

    01:26-01:35

And right now is the first pillar part of that, proclaiming the authority of God's word without apology.

    01:36-01:44

So whether it's me or Pastor Taylor or Rich or whoever stands up here to deliver the message, we have one goal and there's one standard.

    01:44-01:48

It is to represent the word of God to you.

    01:48-01:51

Every church has their thing, this is our thing, all right?

    01:51-01:53

So there's no compromise on that.

    01:53-01:55

We want to represent God's word faithfully to you.

    01:56-02:04

So to that end, I'm going to ask if you would please pray for me, and I will pray for you, and then we're gonna go at it hard today, all right?

    02:05-02:05

    Let's pray.

    02:08-02:10

Father, we believe in the power of your word, that's why we're here.

    02:11-02:19

That's why we worship and pray and evangelize and send people on mission trips, and that's why.

    02:21-02:23

We find our authority in your word.

    02:25-02:27

So Father, let your word be our authority today.

    02:30-02:31

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    02:32-02:35

And all of God's people said, Amen.

    02:37-02:41

I would like you to please stand for the reading of God's word.

    02:42-02:45

Maybe that's something we need to do more often at our church, but grab your Bible.

    02:45-02:49

We're going to look at Hebrews chapter seven, and we're gonna read the first 10 verses.

    02:50-02:55

But out of respect for the word of God, Let's stand as we read this.

    02:57-03:12

Hebrews 7, it says, "For this Melchizedek, "King of Salem, priest of the most high God, "met Abraham, returning from the slaughter of the kings, "and blessed him.

    03:13-03:17

"And to him, Abraham apportioned "a tenth part of everything.

    03:18-03:21

"He is first, by translation of his name, King of righteousness.

    03:23-03:25

And then he is also king of Salem.

    03:26-03:27

    That is king of peace.

    03:28-03:36

He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the son of God.

    03:36-03:38

    He continues a priest forever.

    03:41-03:46

See how great this man was, to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a 10th of the spoils.

    03:47-03:57

And those descendants of Levi, "who received the priestly office "have a commandment in the law "to take tithes from the people," that is, from their brothers.

    03:58-04:01

Though these also are descended from Abraham.

    04:02-04:13

But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.

    04:14-04:20

It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior.

    04:22-04:30

In one case, tithes are received by mortal men, but in the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives.

    04:30-04:46

One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.

    04:46-05:08

You may be seated. Look, this is really advanced stuff. And because I care about you, I'm going to give you a couple options here.

    05:09-05:12

So I'm going to give you the short version first.

    05:14-05:18

And then if you want the longer version, you can stick around for that.

    05:18-05:19

All right, but here's the thing.

    05:22-05:25

Let's talk about Old Testament history because obviously that's what he's doing here, right?

    05:25-05:27

He's going back to the Old Testament.

    05:27-05:28

    So quick review.

    05:30-05:32

We're gonna try to have this on the screens, right?

    05:32-05:37

So we're going back to the time of Abraham.

    05:39-05:46

Or, and before he was Abraham, He was known as Abram, right?

    05:47-05:48

    So that's gonna come up.

    05:48-05:48

    We're gonna see that today.

    05:48-05:50

Same guy, God changed his name.

    05:51-05:55

Okay, so Abraham was promised a child and what was that son's name?

    05:56-05:58

Shout it out if you know it, I didn't study this part.

    05:59-06:00

    Isaac, right.

    06:02-06:05

Okay, so Abraham had Isaac, right?

    06:05-06:09

And then Isaac had Jacob, right?

    06:10-06:16

Now, just like Abram, God changed Jacob's name to Israel.

    06:17-06:19

And Jacob had some sons, right?

    06:19-06:25

He had 12 sons and they became known as the 12 tribes of Israel, right?

    06:25-06:31

So Jacob had all these sons here, you know, like Simeon and, you know, Naphtali and Dan.

    06:32-06:42

But one in particular that we need to focus on today that came up in this passage is Levi, right?

    06:43-06:53

He's famous for his blue jeans, but also what you know Levi for is from Levi came the priests.

    06:54-06:55

    What letter is that?

    06:55-06:58

Okay, we're gonna get through this together.

    07:01-07:12

So under Mosaic law, the law that God gave Moses, only the Levites were allowed to be priests, right?

    07:12-07:14

It was, that was just how it was.

    07:15-07:19

If you were gonna be a priest under old covenant Israel, you had to be a Levite.

    07:20-07:29

But in this passage we're looking at in Hebrews, he met a man, Abraham met a man named Melchizedek.

    07:35-07:41

I'm not gonna ask you to raise your hands, but I'm sure for, I just took off part of that Z and I sure didn't wanna do that.

    07:41-07:42

    I'm gonna try this again.

    07:42-07:44

We're gonna erase that from the record.

    07:46-07:48

Like Bob Ross up here having happy accidents.

    07:50-07:53

    Milk his deck.

    07:55-07:56

All right, we're gonna try this again.

    07:57-07:58

    All right, there we go.

    07:59-08:03

So the Hebrew writer here is taking us back to the times of Abraham.

    08:04-08:12

before the priests of the Levites, all the way back to Abraham, he met a man named Melchizedek.

    08:12-08:18

And he tells us in this passage that Melchizedek was a couple of things.

    08:18-08:26

He was priest and he was also a king.

    08:29-08:31

Okay, so I promised you, here's the short version.

    08:32-08:33

Here's what this passage is about.

    08:35-08:36

    (pages flipping)

    08:38-08:48

The priesthood of Melchizedek is greater than the priesthood of the Levites.

    08:49-09:00

And we know that because Abraham or Abram paid tithes, a tithe rather, paid a tithe to Melchizedek and Melchizedek blessed Abraham.

    09:00-09:09

So we know that this order of priesthood necessarily has to be superior to this order of priesthood.

    09:10-09:15

And Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is of this order of priesthood.

    09:17-09:18

    All right?

    09:20-09:21

    That's the short version.

    09:23-09:28

And if you would like to go, you may, no judgment.

    09:31-09:44

However, if you would like a little deeper explanation as to why this even matters, because it does, it really matters, then I encourage you to stick around.

    09:44-09:52

This is gonna, a lot of this is gonna seem like a Sunday school class today, but that's where we're going here, that we represent the text, right?

    09:54-09:58

We're going in this series through Hebrews called, Why Jesus?

    10:00-10:00

    Why Jesus?

    10:03-10:10

Why are we up here worshiping him and in our seats, worshiping the name of Jesus Christ?

    10:11-10:11

    Why Jesus?

    10:12-10:14

Why is he the content of all of our sermons?

    10:14-10:16

Why do we have communion together?

    10:17-10:18

Why do we send people on mission trips?

    10:21-10:23

Hebrews explains why Jesus is such a big deal.

    10:26-10:30

And we've seen so far in our journey through Hebrews that Jesus is God's last word.

    10:30-10:31

    Jesus is God himself.

    10:32-10:33

We've seen he's greater than the angels.

    10:33-10:34

    He's greater than Moses.

    10:35-10:36

    He's greater than Joshua.

    10:36-10:38

And he says, come to him today.

    10:38-10:41

    Do not harden your heart.

    10:43-10:49

Like the people on the verge of the promised land, didn't have the faith, he says, don't don't harden your heart, you've got to come to Jesus today.

    10:51-10:59

But then in chapter five, verses 10 and 11, the Hebrew writer mentions Melchizedek.

    11:01-11:09

And he says, "I got a lot to tell you about Melchizedek." He goes, "But you couldn't handle it." He says, "You're dull of hearing.

    11:10-11:15

You wouldn't understand what I'm saying." So he makes this pause, and that was the last few sermons.

    11:15-11:25

And in this pause, he again says, "Come to Jesus before it's too late." And as Pastor Taylor preached last week, like, look, we have security in the promise of God, right?

    11:26-11:28

This is a sure thing, so come to him.

    11:30-11:34

And when we get to chapter seven, you see what he's doing is he's saying, okay, enough with the pause.

    11:34-11:40

Now let's get back to this Melchizedek stuff that I sort of broke the ice with earlier.

    11:42-11:44

And like, okay, what's the point?

    11:45-11:48

Like I said, some of you maybe have never even heard that name before.

    11:48-11:51

Like what's the big deal of Melchizedek?

    11:53-12:03

And I've shared with you before, some of these passages in Hebrews might be lost on us contextually because we're not Jewish.

    12:04-12:07

But you see for the Jews, this was a huge deal.

    12:07-12:10

This was part of their national identity.

    12:10-12:17

We had the law and part of the law was having these priests that were mediators that offered sin on our behalf.

    12:17-12:20

and made things right between us and God.

    12:20-12:22

That was a huge deal to them.

    12:23-12:39

So for Jesus Christ to come along, to be the only mediator, the only high priest, this would have been a like, this would have just shattered everything that they understood, everything they grew up with, everything they knew about their history.

    12:42-12:51

The Hebrew writer says the Levitical priesthood under Mosaic law was inferior to Melchizedek.

    12:51-12:57

Jesus as high priest is greater than all of the Levitical priests because he's of this order.

    12:58-13:01

Absolutely mind blowing to the Jews.

    13:01-13:02

    All right.

    13:05-13:08

So that's probably the third longest introduction ever.

    13:10-13:12

So let's get to Hebrews chapter seven, verse one.

    13:13-13:14

    Can somebody grab my water?

    13:14-13:15

I think I left it back by my seat.

    13:16-13:17

Jillian, could you grab it back there?

    13:17-13:20

So she handed it to me and like in knucklehead, I left it back there.

    13:21-13:22

    And don't throw it.

    13:23-13:28

She was gonna throw it and I know she would have hit it, but hey, thanks, bud.

    13:28-13:29

    Thanks, Jilly.

    13:29-13:32

All right, Hebrews chapter seven, verse one.

    13:32-13:33

All right, we're gonna break this down.

    13:33-13:34

We're gonna get through this together.

    13:34-13:35

    You with me?

    13:36-13:37

    All right, all right.

    13:38-13:40

'Cause this is mind blowing stuff.

    13:40-13:46

You gotta stay tuned in because I guess I'm kind of a nerd for this stuff, admittedly, but this is mind blowing stuff here.

    13:47-13:50

And just track with me because your mind is going to explode too.

    13:51-13:51

    All right?

    13:52-13:53

    So let's break this down.

    13:53-14:10

Verse one says, "For this Melchizedek, King of Salem, "priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning "from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him." Okay, so he's obviously talking about a contemporary of Abraham.

    14:11-14:16

We're going back to those days And these days in particular are Genesis 14.

    14:18-14:25

And something you have to understand about these days, it might seem kind of weird to us, but every little area or city had its own king.

    14:25-14:36

I know it sounds weird, but like imagine in our day, if there was like a king of Zillianopole and a king of Blonocks and Mike Wolsky, the king of Zillianopole, he's pointing to himself back there.

    14:36-14:38

I would vote for you if that was the thing.

    14:38-14:46

But like, you know, a king of McKee's Rocks, every little area has its own king, right?

    14:46-15:03

So there was a man, a king, named, and I can never pronounce his name spot on, so I'm just gonna say it confidently and you're gonna go, "Oh, that sounds right." Shadolamir, we'll call him Chad.

    15:06-15:08

Oh, come on, you don't think people called him King Chad?

    15:09-15:10

    At least behind his back.

    15:10-15:17

Okay, so there was this King Shadolammer and he got these other kings and they went like conquering other areas, right?

    15:17-15:23

And they would take captives and they would take spoils, but they made a huge mistake.

    15:24-15:27

One of the captives they took was named Lot.

    15:28-15:29

And do you know who Lot is?

    15:30-15:31

    Abraham's nephew.

    15:31-15:53

So Abraham found out that his nephew was taken captive by this group of kings and he rolled up his sleeves and he's like, "All right, it is time for a royal beat down." And he gathered some allies and they made this surprise attack by night and slaughtered the kings, Hebrews tells us.

    15:55-15:58

And he took back the captives and the spoil and he went home.

    15:59-16:00

And that takes us to Genesis 14.

    16:00-16:01

It's gonna be on the screen.

    16:02-16:03

So that takes us to this passage.

    16:03-16:26

It says, "After his," Abram, Abraham, "After his return from the defeat of King Chad, and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the valley of Sheba," that is the king's valley, "and Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine.

    16:27-16:29

He was priest of God most high.

    16:30-16:44

And he blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram by God most high, possessor of heaven and earth, and blessed be God most high, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And Abram gave him a 10th of everything.

    16:47-17:00

So Melchizedek brought out the bread and the wine, he blessed Abraham, Abraham gave Melchizedek a 10th of the spoils, and that is all that is said about Melchizedek in Genesis.

    17:01-17:07

And it's astounding to me that for the Hebrew writer, it's like such, this guy is such a big deal.

    17:07-17:12

Like, "Oh, I'm gonna tell you about my kids and some of you can't hear, but I'm gonna tell you now." And he's got such a big deal.

    17:13-17:17

And he shows up for three verses in Genesis.

    17:20-17:24

But he shows up in just one more verse in the Old Testament.

    17:25-17:28

And this verse is so astronomically significant.

    17:30-17:32

This is a game changer verse.

    17:32-17:34

    It's Psalm 110, verse four.

    17:34-17:40

It says, "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind." Sounds like Pastor Taylor's sermon last week, right?

    17:41-17:45

"The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind." He's speaking of the Messiah.

    17:46-17:50

You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

    17:52-17:55

Just that one verse, name shows up, no explanation.

    17:55-17:58

And then we get to Hebrews seven.

    17:59-18:01

and we learn the significance of Melchizedek.

    18:01-18:04

And what we're getting into here is typology.

    18:05-18:12

You see, the Old Testament was filled with these pictures and images of what the Messiah would be like, what he would do.

    18:13-18:20

And they would describe the Messiah in such a way that sort of when the Messiah showed up, we were able to recognize him.

    18:20-18:24

Oh, God sort of painted the picture of what you would be like in the Old Testament.

    18:24-18:26

And then when Jesus came, it was like, that's him, That's him.

    18:27-18:28

    So that's typology, right?

    18:28-18:38

Like an example is, you remember like in the book of Numbers, Israel sinned again in their travels and the fiery serpents sent from God were biting them and killing them.

    18:38-18:42

And God told Moses to make this bronze serpent, put it on a pole.

    18:42-18:48

And when it's lifted up, when people get bit, they look to the bronze serpent and they're saved.

    18:48-19:01

Well, then you get to John chapter three and Jesus said, just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, he says, "So the Son of Man will be lifted up." And see that bronze serpent was a picture of Jesus.

    19:01-19:06

Lifted up, people look to, people are saved.

    19:06-19:09

I see when Jesus was lifted up, he was lifted up on a cross.

    19:10-19:12

He died on that cross to take away your sin.

    19:13-19:25

And you see, if you turn to Jesus Christ, if you look to him, you'll be saved for much more than a snake bite, you'll be saved from the bite of sin, which is an eternal death.

    19:27-19:33

And Jesus said, when he's lifted up, people are going to look to him and be saved.

    19:33-19:35

    It's a type, it's a picture.

    19:36-19:45

And see Melchizedek was a type, a very important person in the Old Testament that was a picture of Jesus, pertaining to Jesus as priest.

    19:46-19:48

So we read verses one through 10.

    19:48-19:49

    What's the point?

    19:50-19:50

    Here's the point.

    19:52-19:57

Melchizedek's priesthood was superior to the Levitical priesthood in every way.

    19:57-20:06

And Jesus Christ, the Messiah, as promised, Psalm 110, verse four, is a priest in the order of Melchizedek.

    20:08-20:18

So since Christ is in this order, which is greater than this order, then Jesus is once again superior.

    20:20-20:33

And he's telling these Jews, "It's okay to turn from the old covenant to the new covenant in the blood of Christ because he's in this different priesthood." Is everybody with me so far?

    20:33-20:34

    Because I can start over.

    20:40-20:50

And you're all like, "No, this is crystal." So breaking it down very quickly, how is Melchizedek's priesthood greater than the Levitical priesthood.

    20:51-20:57

Number one, on your outline, the Levitical priesthood was for Israel.

    20:57-20:59

    Melchizedek's priesthood was for everyone.

    21:00-21:02

Look again, we're gonna go through this quickly.

    21:02-21:10

It says, "For this Melchizedek, King of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham, returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him.

    21:11-21:21

And to him, Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything." See Melchizedek was not a Levitical priest because they didn't even exist yet.

    21:21-21:26

The Bible says he was a priest of most high God.

    21:26-21:28

    That's El Elyon.

    21:30-21:33

That's not the covenant name of God.

    21:33-21:36

That's the power name of God.

    21:37-21:37

    What's the point?

    21:37-21:43

Well, the point is Levitical priests, they were really for covenant Israel.

    21:44-21:46

Melchizedek's priesthood was not so limited.

    21:50-21:57

And the Hebrew writer's point is Jesus is a priest after the order of Melchizedek, meaning that Jesus is the Messiah, not just for Israel.

    21:57-21:59

Jesus is the Messiah for who?

    22:00-22:01

    The whole world, right?

    22:02-22:04

And that checks out in the New Testament, doesn't it?

    22:04-22:06

    Doesn't that check out 1 John 2, 2?

    22:07-22:12

He's a propitiation for our sins and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the Saite church.

    22:13-22:14

    whole world, right?

    22:15-22:16

    You don't believe me, John 1 29.

    22:17-22:18

Remember what John the Baptist said when he saw Jesus?

    22:19-22:23

He said, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the," what?

    22:24-22:25

    The world, right?

    22:25-22:26

And that's the Hebrew writer's point.

    22:27-22:29

He's not like just a priest for Israel.

    22:29-22:30

He's a priest for the whole world, right?

    22:31-22:34

Number two, the Levitical priest could never be king.

    22:35-22:37

    Melchizedek was priest and king.

    22:41-22:42

Look at the second part of verse two.

    22:43-22:46

It says, "He is first by translation of his name, King of righteousness.

    22:47-22:57

And then he is also King of Salem, that is King of peace." See in Israel, if you were a Levitical priest, you absolutely could not be King.

    22:58-23:00

You couldn't, you were not allowed to be King.

    23:02-23:10

And Melchizedek, as a Hebrew writer reminds us, he was priest, yes, but he was also at the same time, he was King.

    23:12-23:14

    He was king of Salem.

    23:16-23:24

And that place Salem later added onto its name and became known as Jerusalem.

    23:27-23:27

    Right?

    23:28-23:33

So his royalty is a picture of Jesus.

    23:34-23:41

Just the very fact that Melchizedek is priest and king points to the Messiah who would be priest and king.

    23:43-23:45

    Even the names have significance.

    23:46-23:53

Melchizedek's very name means King of Righteousness, and there is no higher King of Righteousness than the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

    23:54-24:01

And Melchizedek was King of Salem, which in Hebrew, Salem, Shalom, means what?

    24:02-24:03

    Peace, right?

    24:04-24:07

So he was King of Peace, king of righteousness and peace.

    24:09-24:14

I don't know if there are two better words that we could use to describe the lordship of Jesus Christ.

    24:14-24:18

He is the king of righteousness and peace, pictured in Melchizedek.

    24:18-24:22

Number three, Levitical priesthood was hereditary.

    24:22-24:25

    Melchizedek's priesthood was personal.

    24:26-24:26

    Look at verse three.

    24:27-24:39

It says, the first part of verse three, it says, "He is without father or mother or genealogy." As I said, for the Levitical priesthood, there was really one main criteria.

    24:39-24:43

Remember a couple of weeks ago, we were joking about requirements to get a job.

    24:43-24:51

Well, if you're going to be a priest in Old Testament Israel, there was one thing that absolutely without question had to be on your application.

    24:51-24:52

You had to be a Levite.

    24:54-24:55

    No question.

    24:56-25:07

And Melchizedek's priesthood had nothing to do with his family line because he points out here, We don't even know Melchizedek's genealogy.

    25:08-25:09

    We have no idea.

    25:11-25:15

In other words, he didn't get the job because he was in the right family.

    25:17-25:44

And you see, that's what the Hebrew writer here is saying, is like, look, my Jewish friends, if there was a priestly line that was different than the Levitical line and came before the Levitical line, is it possible that there's a different priestly line that comes after this?

    25:46-25:53

Obviously there is, because God promised that the Messiah would be a high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

    25:57-26:01

Right now there's somebody sitting here going, I should have left after the short version.

    26:03-26:04

But you made it this far.

    26:05-26:06

We're gonna get through this together.

    26:09-26:10

    I love this stuff.

    26:10-26:11

This is so fascinating to me.

    26:12-26:13

    Number four, write this down.

    26:13-26:15

Levitical priesthood was limited in time.

    26:16-26:19

    Melchizedek's priesthood never expired.

    26:19-26:21

Look at the second part of verse three.

    26:21-26:30

It says, "Having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God, He continues a priest forever." Listen, you got to understand this.

    26:30-26:32

    Just look up here.

    26:33-26:36

He's not saying that Melchizedek was eternal.

    26:38-26:39

    He's not saying that.

    26:40-26:44

He's not saying that Melchizedek never died.

    26:45-26:46

    He's not saying that.

    26:46-26:50

What he's saying is, we have no record of it.

    26:52-27:05

He's saying this, look, from a literary standpoint, or shall we say on the page, Melchizedek appears eternal.

    27:07-27:20

From a literary standpoint on the page, Melchizedek appears as if he's always alive because we don't have any recorded beginning or ending.

    27:20-27:24

We don't know where or when he was born or what his parents' names were.

    27:24-27:30

And we don't know where or when or how he died, right?

    27:30-27:32

    Where did you come from?

    27:33-27:34

    Where did you go?

    27:35-27:37

    Where did you come from?

    27:39-27:41

    Cotton-eyed Mel Kisadak.

    27:47-27:59

You see, he's saying, look, On the page, he doesn't have a beginning or end, but you know, that's a perfect picture of Jesus who literally, literally had no beginning or end because Jesus is eternal.

    28:01-28:07

You see the Levitical priests, they could only serve from ages 25 to 50, right?

    28:07-28:14

But Melchizedek with no record of his birth, no record of his death, on the page, he's serving forever, right?

    28:16-28:22

So number five, the Levitical priesthood paid tithes to Melchizedek.

    28:22-28:25

How's Melchizedek's priesthood greater than the Levitical priesthood?

    28:26-28:28

Why is this greater than this?

    28:28-28:35

It's because he's saying, this paid tithes to this.

    28:37-28:37

    That's huge.

    28:39-28:40

Look at verses four through 10 again.

    28:43-29:02

It says, so verse four, "See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils." Like Melchizedek must've been awesome if father Abraham, like Jew number one, paid a tithe to this man, this king.

    29:03-29:16

He says, "And those descendants of Levi who received the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham.

    29:17-29:23

Okay, so these priests took tithes from other Jews is what he's reminding us of.

    29:23-29:25

And here's the point that he's making.

    29:25-29:52

He says, verse six, "But this man," Melchizedek, "who does not have his descent from them," meaning he wasn't a Levite, "received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises." And he's, I love verse seven, he goes, "It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the superior." He's like, everybody knows that, right?

    29:53-29:54

    Everybody knows that.

    29:55-29:58

When a blessing is given, the superior blesses the inferior.

    29:59-30:00

And which way did the blessing go?

    30:00-30:01

    It went this way.

    30:01-30:06

So he's like, remember that is, this guy's obviously superior if he is blessing him.

    30:07-30:07

    Right?

    30:08-30:39

So, verse eight, "In one case, tithes are received by mortal men, the Levites, but the other case, by one of whom it is testified that he lives, Mr. Alive Forever on the page, Melchizedek." I love this, verse nine, he says, "One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor Melchizedek met him.

    30:42-30:45

So he's saying Melchizedek must have been great if Abraham tied to him.

    30:46-30:48

And he says, Melchizedek so great.

    30:49-30:51

    Like how great was he?

    30:51-30:53

He goes, think about it this way.

    30:54-31:01

Even the Levites tied to Melchizedek because the Levites eventually came from Abraham.

    31:05-31:06

    You see what he's saying?

    31:07-31:14

He goes, "I'll tell you how great Melchizedek is." He says, "You know, these guys get tithes, right?

    31:14-31:21

These guys receive tithes." He's like, "These guys, they actually paid tithes to him.

    31:21-31:39

That's how great he is." Like, "Well, no, no, no, they came much later, you said." Well, his point is, since Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek, he said, "It's like Isaac and Jacob and Jacob's kids, including Levi and all the priests.

    31:39-31:49

It's like they all paid tithes to Melchizedek because they were still in Abraham's loins at the time Abraham paid the tithe.

    31:50-31:51

    You understand that?

    31:53-31:56

Abraham acknowledged Melchizedek's greatness with the tithe.

    31:56-32:02

Therefore, he's saying his great grandson, Levi did.

    32:02-32:06

    So, great grandson, right?

    32:07-32:09

    Son, grandson, great-grandson.

    32:10-32:13

And then these would be like greats, greats, and great, great, greats.

    32:13-32:19

And for those of you that are keeping an accurate record of this, right?

    32:21-32:30

He's like, they're all paying tithes through Abraham because they were still yet to be born, still in his loins.

    32:32-32:35

So to explain this for the Jews would have been like,

    32:37-32:37

    (blows air)

    32:39-32:40

    Wow.

    32:43-32:53

I mean, the Jews had such a deep understanding of the Old Testament and Israel's culture and Israel's history so much more than we do.

    32:56-32:58

But there's a huge piece here for us.

    33:02-33:06

And this is what I want you to chew on.

    33:06-33:15

You know, some people, when we think of Jesus Christ, there are some people that think of Jesus as the King.

    33:19-33:52

You know, and I sort of think of like, like some of our Roman Catholic friends, quite honestly, maybe some people that we know that don't go to church, they have this idea that Jesus is this exalted, transcendent, in charge, and there's a fear there and a reverence there that honestly, I think we've lost in the church to a large degree.

    33:53-33:58

But some people think of Jesus as the King, right?

    33:59-34:07

He's up there and he's powerful and he's transcendent and it's, oh, it's terrifying to think that someday to die and stand before him.

    34:10-34:11

    But then there's other people.

    34:13-34:21

And I think this is most people in churches like this, that they think of Jesus as the priest.

    34:22-34:23

    And who's the priest?

    34:23-34:25

The priest is somebody that deals with sin, right?

    34:25-34:27

    In other words, a savior.

    34:28-34:30

So what's a good symbol for a priest?

    34:32-34:37

You know, all right, we'll do like an, How about we'll draw like an altar, like an Old Testament altar, right?

    34:39-34:40

And that'll be our symbol for priest.

    34:41-34:43

If you don't like it, you didn't shout out anything better.

    34:46-34:48

So this is the Old Testament altar.

    34:48-34:54

We got the horns up here and it's made out of bricks.

    34:55-34:57

So we'll do one of these deals here.

    34:58-35:00

This is our older symbolizing priest.

    35:00-35:03

Some people only think of Jesus as the priest.

    35:05-35:07

Like Jesus takes away my sin.

    35:09-35:11

Jesus is my ticket to heaven.

    35:13-35:14

    Jesus is my friend.

    35:15-35:17

Jesus understands when I mess up.

    35:18-35:20

    Jesus, he's my buddy.

    35:25-35:32

And I wanna ask you this morning, On these two, where do you lean?

    35:35-35:40

'Cause most people lean hard one direction or the other.

    35:40-35:42

He's my king or he's my priest.

    35:46-35:57

And you see, with all that the Hebrew writer is saying in this passage, here's the thing that I think we need to catch.

    35:58-36:06

is yes, we have this God who is transcendent and sovereign.

    36:08-36:16

And at the same time, we have this priest who loves and is merciful and is gracious.

    36:17-36:18

And what do we have right here?

    36:20-36:26

You see, this is what the Hebrew writer is telling us.

    36:28-36:29

that this is where you find Jesus.

    36:32-36:37

In the order of Melchizedek, he's the king.

    36:40-36:44

And also in the order of Melchizedek, he's a priest.

    36:45-36:47

He's one who makes us right with God.

    36:53-36:54

    What's the point?

    36:54-36:55

    What's the impact here?

    36:57-36:58

    You know, here it is.

    36:59-37:03

We spend a lot of messages begging people to come to Christ.

    37:04-37:07

Do not harden your heart like they did in the wilderness, on the edge of the promised land, refused.

    37:10-37:14

And then remember Hebrews 6, it is impossible to renew to repentance.

    37:14-37:20

Somebody that gets to the edge and walks away, they've tasted and they've seen and they've been part of it and then they walk away.

    37:24-37:28

And the question I'd like to present to you is this, why wouldn't somebody receive Jesus?

    37:31-37:33

    Why wouldn't somebody receive Jesus?

    37:34-37:51

I mean, the promise of eternal life, the promise of his constant abiding presence, the fellowship of some amazing people, the promise to someday make all things new, why wouldn't somebody receive Jesus Christ?

    37:53-37:56

I mean, after all, this thing sounds great here, the priest thing.

    37:59-38:05

I recognize in my life that I need that because I'm a fallen sinner by nature.

    38:05-38:08

I recognize so easily that I need that.

    38:10-38:11

    Here it is, church.

    38:11-38:17

I think one of the reasons that people can sit in church and not receive Jesus is 'cause we're all about this.

    38:18-38:19

    You guys see over there?

    38:21-38:21

    All right.

    38:22-38:24

We send poor Russ to India and he came and look at a whiteboard?

    38:24-38:25

What's the matter with you people?

    38:27-38:36

We're so sold on Jesus being this, but we're a lot slower to recognize that we need this.

    38:38-38:44

Because when it comes to the king thing, you see, that's when we start getting, ah, nobody tells me what to do.

    38:44-38:46

I don't like somebody telling me how to live my life.

    38:46-38:48

I don't like somebody telling me how to spend money.

    38:48-38:50

I don't like somebody telling me...

    38:54-39:00

The bottom line is people want Jesus on their terms, not on his terms.

    39:01-39:03

And I want to tell you today that that's not an option.

    39:06-39:13

In pastoral ministry, one of my favorite things to do is weddings.

    39:16-39:25

And when I'm talking about weddings, I'm talking about people in the church that are believers, love the Lord, love each other, people that I know.

    39:26-39:29

When it's that scenario, I love doing weddings.

    39:29-39:32

For me, it's a big party, you get to spend time.

    39:32-39:33

    Right, remember that, Taylor?

    39:33-39:35

I did your wedding and Murphy's are here.

    39:35-39:36

You know, Big James, I did his wedding too.

    39:36-39:39

I felt like a little kid with him and Kaylee 'cause they're so tall.

    39:39-39:53

I was like, "Yeah, my little nephew married him." But anyways, I love those weddings, to spend that time with them and get to know them and hear their story, and just the huge celebration of these people that I love coming together and making covenant.

    39:53-39:56

And that's one of my favorite things that I get to do.

    39:57-40:00

And do you know what one of my least favorite things to do in ministry?

    40:02-40:06

Is weddings for people that I don't know.

    40:07-40:22

Because a lot of times as a pastor, I get roped into that, whether it's like family of friends, or friends of family, or somebody that found me online, or like at our old church, they were just driving by, they liked the architecture of the church.

    40:22-40:24

I wanna get married here 'cause it's pretty, will you marry us?

    40:26-40:28

    And I hate those weddings.

    40:30-40:31

    I just do.

    40:34-40:35

And I'm gonna tell you why.

    40:38-40:56

Because in those weddings, what typically happens as they come because they want me to legally marry them, but they're not interested really in what God said about it.

    40:58-41:05

'Cause I do a seven session pre-marital counseling thing with them where we talk, we talk, right, Kaylee, we go through this stuff.

    41:05-41:08

We talk about what does God say about all of this?

    41:08-41:09

What does God say is the role of a husband?

    41:09-41:12

What does God say is the role of a wife?

    41:12-41:13

You know, and we walk through all that.

    41:14-41:16

    conflict resolution and communication.

    41:16-41:20

And we go through all that intimacy and finances.

    41:20-41:22

And we cover all of these things.

    41:25-41:30

So many times I get people that are like, "Look, can you just do the wedding?

    41:30-41:33

"But do we have to have so many scriptures in our wedding?

    41:35-41:39

"And do we really have to do "all that premarital counseling stuff?

    41:40-41:50

"And can your wedding sermon, can you keep it short?" And I'm like, "We've never met, have we?" Can I keep it short?

    41:53-41:53

    Good one.

    41:55-42:00

But they're like, "Look, could you just pronounce this "and bounce this?

    42:00-42:14

"Do we have to go through all of this, "all of the scripture stuff?" And you know, my answer is, I'm like, I can't do that.

    42:15-42:15

    Why?

    42:18-42:19

    Because of who I am.

    42:21-42:30

Like, look, there's not agent of the state authority to sign marriage licenses, Jeffrey S. Miller.

    42:30-42:33

And then over here, you have Pastor Jeff.

    42:33-42:35

Oh, you don't recognize me without my Bible, sorry.

    42:35-42:37

Over here, you have Pastor Jeff.

    42:38-42:40

and like they're two separate entities.

    42:40-42:46

And they're like, "We just want this guy." And I'm like, "But that's not an option because I'm not one or the other.

    42:47-42:50

I can't subdivide myself to please you.

    42:51-42:52

And you can't do that either.

    42:53-42:54

And do you know who else isn't gonna do that?

    42:56-42:58

Jesus isn't going to do that either.

    42:59-43:03

Oh, you wanna, do you want a savior, but not a Lord?

    43:03-43:10

You wanna go to heaven, but you don't want the God of the universe who died for you to be the authority in your life?

    43:10-43:11

Okay, I'll just be that guy.

    43:12-43:13

    Will Jesus do that?

    43:14-43:17

    No, Jesus does not subdivide.

    43:19-43:23

And that's the point, church, that we need to catch here.

    43:24-43:30

But this is very complicated stuff, but our big takeaway needs to be, he's King and priest both.

    43:32-43:33

He's not just one or the other.

    43:38-43:46

And I need to ask you, you know, I imagine we're all sold on the priest thing, but I just need to ask you as we close, is Jesus your King?

    43:54-43:58

And in evaluating that, I just need to ask you, is there any area of your life where he's not the King?

    43:59-44:06

Is there any area of your life that you have sort of tried to keep out from under his authority.

    44:10-44:11

    Like finances.

    44:13-44:18

Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, "there your heart will be also." The Bible says you should give a first fruits to God.

    44:18-44:22

You should be like, you know, Abraham paying the tithe to Melchizedek.

    44:23-44:25

We should give God first and best.

    44:25-44:38

And if you're like, "Yeah, I'm not really on board with God telling me "how to spend my money." "Eh, it's God's money." And you trying to keep that separate from the authority of God tells me that he's not your king in that area.

    44:41-44:42

    Or sexually.

    44:45-44:52

The Bible tells us that God created that intimate relationship for a man and a woman in a covenant relationship as husband and wife.

    44:53-44:54

    That's why he created that.

    44:55-45:01

Like, "Eh, I don't really think that, you know, "the Bible should tell me who I'm allowed to be with they're not allowed to be with.

    45:01-45:02

Okay, then he's not your king.

    45:04-45:07

And you're not taking him for who he is, right?

    45:07-45:11

Bible says we need to forgive those who sin against us.

    45:11-45:12

    They come back, repent.

    45:12-45:14

Jesus says you must forgive them.

    45:14-45:17

And if there's somebody in your life that you're like, I will never forgive that person.

    45:18-45:19

Then you know what that tells me?

    45:19-45:21

That tells me he's not your king.

    45:27-45:44

If there's any area in your life where you know Jesus is commanding you and you refuse to do what he says and instead insist on doing it your way, Jesus would say to you the same thing he said in Luke 6:46.

    45:46-45:48

When he says, "Why do you call me Lord, Lord?

    45:51-45:56

"And not do what I tell you." I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please.

    45:56-45:58

as the worship team makes their way forward.

    45:59-46:13

And I wanna commend you for diligently going through a very complicated section of Scripture.

    46:17-46:49

But as we have our heads bowed, I just wanna challenge you to pray Father, please show me any area of my life, whether it's finances or sexually or my relationships with others or the way I speak to people or the way I speak about people or any area of my life where I have not submitted to the kingship of Jesus Christ.

    46:50-46:51

    Father, show me that.

    46:56-47:08

And you need to pray, Father, I see in your word that Jesus Christ is my high priest, and at the same time, he is my king, because he is in the order of Melchizedek.

    47:08-47:15

And I'm not going to try to receive Jesus for just what I want him to be, I want to receive him for who he is.

    47:16-47:18

And according to your word, this is who he is.

    47:18-47:20

He is my priest and he is my king.

    47:26-47:28

Father, I pray that you would be glorified in our lives.

    47:28-47:38

Father, in my life and the lives of my brothers and sisters in Christ that are sitting here, that are watching this stream, that are gonna be listening to this later.

    47:38-47:40

    Father, we love you.

    47:42-48:00

And Father, I pray that you would give us the faith trust you that we would follow Jesus Christ as King. Yes, He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, but He is also the King who sits at your right hand and who reigns forevermore.

    48:03-48:10

Father, may Jesus Christ be our priest and King. We pray in His glorious name.

    48:11-48:11

    Amen.

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Explain, in your own words, the overall point of this passage. Why would this have been such a huge revelation for the Jews who received this message?

  3. Why do some people believe in Jesus as their Savior, but not as their King? How do we sometimes justify “subdividing Jesus”, and thereby trying to take Him on our terms instead of His?

All right, so you can open up to Hebrews chapter 6 verses 13 through 20 Hebrews chapter 6 verses 13 through 20 and I was told before I came up here that some of these bulletins may not be exactly fully correct So if you have the bullets that's not correct. You'll win a prize on your way out I'm not sure what it is, but now you really don't sorry. But anyway, why I should trust the Lord That's what it should be So if you don't have that there are some blank ones back there on the table, or you can scratch it out, pay attention, and fill it out as need be, all right?

    01:35-01:40

All right, so I want you to raise your hand if you ever went to sleep-away summer camp as a kid.

    01:41-01:42

Not as many as I was expecting.

    01:43-01:45

Who never went to summer camp?

    01:45-01:48

All right, you are my people, awesome.

    01:49-01:53

It was a family tradition for us to go to Seneca Hills Bible Camp.

    01:53-01:56

My brother went there, my sister went there.

    01:56-02:00

I refused to go for several reasons.

    02:00-02:05

First of all, it's maybe hard for you to believe 'cause I'm standing up here preaching a message.

    02:05-02:08

I was a very shy and introverted kid.

    02:08-02:10

I didn't really like talking to new people.

    02:11-02:12

Those are two of the reasons.

    02:13-02:16

But do you want to know the number one reason why I didn't want to go to camp?

    02:17-02:20

I was afraid my parents were gonna leave me there.

    02:22-02:22

    (audience laughing)

    02:22-02:25

I was afraid they'd be like, "Oh yeah, Taylor's not here.

    02:25-02:26

    It's pretty nice.

    02:27-02:28

    You should stay there.

    02:28-02:29

    That'd be fantastic.

    02:30-02:33

All the parents in the room are like, why would you ever, ever think that?

    02:33-02:37

I have no idea, but it even extends into other activities in my life.

    02:38-02:46

Like VBS, in school, my mom will tell you she had to come right on time or a few minutes early or it would be a problem.

    02:46-02:48

    I would be really upset.

    02:48-02:51

I remember one time at VBS, I went to my counselor, I'm like, can I call my mom?

    02:52-02:54

Can I call my mom and make sure she's gonna pick me up?

    02:55-02:58

My parents gave me no reason to doubt them.

    02:59-03:01

They never once left me in a parking lot.

    03:02-03:05

They never once left me on the side of the road to fend for myself.

    03:07-03:11

But for some reason, I had a hard time trusting they would come through for me.

    03:12-03:15

I had a hard time believing that they would pick me up.

    03:17-03:23

You may laugh at me and my craziness as a child, but we all do the same thing with God, don't we?

    03:24-03:27

We all struggle with trusting the Lord.

    03:27-03:34

We all wrestle with believing that he knows what he is doing and he will always keep his promises to us.

    03:35-03:43

We all have trust issues when it comes to God, even though he has proved himself faithful to us time and time again.

    03:44-03:58

This morning, we're gonna study Hebrews chapter six, verses 13 through 20, and unpack three reasons why we should have a rock solid confidence the Lord, why we should trust in His many promises to us.

    03:59-04:02

So I want you to answer this really important question.

    04:02-04:03

    It's very simple.

    04:04-04:05

Why should I trust the Lord?

    04:07-04:09

Why should I trust the Lord?

    04:10-04:13

Number one, because His character is unquestionable.

    04:14-04:18

    Because His character is unquestionable.

    04:20-04:23

    Let's read verses 13 through 15 together.

    04:24-04:34

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, saying, surely I will bless you and multiply you.

    04:34-04:39

And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise.

    04:41-04:49

The author of Hebrews points us back to the example of Abraham and God making a covenant with Abraham in the book of Genesis.

    04:49-04:54

To fully understand this passage, we kind of have to recap the life of Abraham.

    04:55-04:57

When we first meet this man, he's named Abram.

    04:58-05:00

He's 75 years old and he lives in a place called Ur.

    05:01-05:10

Eventually, God changes his name to Abraham to show that this man's identity, his purpose, has been radically transformed, radically altered.

    05:11-05:14

From now on, we'll just refer to him as Abraham to keep things simple.

    05:16-05:26

So in Genesis 12, the Lord first appears to Abraham tells him to leave behind all that he knows and step into a future that will be shown to him.

    05:27-05:30

And God offers a fourfold promise to Abraham.

    05:31-05:41

He offers him a family line, a land for his descendants to possess, a great name, and blessing that will impact the entire world.

    05:42-05:44

It's a pretty awesome promise, right?

    05:44-05:45

    It sounds fantastic.

    05:46-05:49

But what's the problem with this promise from a human perspective.

    05:51-05:53

Abraham and his wife are not spring chickens.

    05:55-05:59

Actually, later on in Hebrews, Abraham is described as good as dead.

    06:00-06:02

Imagine putting that on a birthday cake for somebody.

    06:05-06:08

On top of that, his wife Sarah is unable to have children.

    06:10-06:16

So the idea that she will have a son that will carry on this family line seems slim to none.

    06:17-06:19

    Abraham still listens to God.

    06:19-06:21

He obeys and he leaves behind everything that he knows.

    06:23-06:25

But later on, Genesis 15, Abraham is struggling.

    06:25-06:28

He is wrestling with trusting in the Lord.

    06:28-06:32

He goes to the Lord and says, God, I know you've promised me a son.

    06:32-06:33

I know you've promised me a family line.

    06:34-06:36

I'm having a hard time trusting you.

    06:36-06:38

How is this going to happen?

    06:40-06:46

The Lord says, Abraham, look toward heaven and number the stars if you're able to number them.

    06:47-06:50

    so shall your offspring be.

    06:52-06:53

This next verse is really important.

    06:54-07:00

And Abraham believed the Lord and he counted to him as righteousness.

    07:01-07:10

In that moment, even though Abraham still isn't seeing the evidence, he's not seeing the promise, he has faith.

    07:10-07:14

He wholeheartedly believes that God will provide a son.

    07:15-07:18

It's not the next day, it's not the next year.

    07:18-07:23

Abraham had to wait 25 years for this child of promise to come.

    07:25-07:29

He had faith, even though it looked impossible from a human perspective.

    07:30-07:39

At this point, in Genesis 15, Abraham has to take the Lord on faith and believe that one day his faith will become sight.

    07:40-07:54

So after this declaration of faith, God brings a deep sleep upon Abraham and he makes a covenant, an unbreakable agreement with Abraham to prove that these promises will come to pass.

    07:55-08:00

You know, in 2023, we finalized deals by signing contracts or shaking hands.

    08:01-08:03

That's not how it happened back in Abraham's day.

    08:03-08:07

It was a much grosser process.

    08:08-08:19

Two parties entering into a covenant in Abraham's day would cut an animal apart, they would take the pieces, and walk through the pieces to show that they would keep their part of the covenant.

    08:20-08:28

And by walking through those pieces, you're saying, let what happened to these animals happen to me if I don't keep my part of the covenant.

    08:30-08:32

Is anybody else glad that we don't do that anymore?

    08:33-08:44

Imagine doing that at the car dealership as you're closing on a Honda Civic, or in the Howard Hanna parking lot, closing on your dream house, okay honey, let's walk through the animal pieces.

    08:45-08:47

I'm so glad we don't have to do that anymore.

    08:50-09:00

But in Genesis 15, God has Abraham cut animals in half, placed the halves across from each other, but he doesn't have Abraham walk through the pieces.

    09:00-10:11

As I said, he puts a deep sleep upon Abraham, and God alone, in the form of a fiery torch a smoking oven passes through the pieces. Why did God do that? Why did God exclude Abraham? Because the keeping of this promise of this covenant depended fully upon God and not on Abraham at all. This was an unconditional covenant that the Lord fully took upon himself to carry out. In a sense, God made a covenant with himself. This covenant didn't depend upon Abraham's imperfect performance and faithfulness, instead it depended upon God's perfect faithfulness and performance. God owed himself the fulfillment of these promises. You know this makes sense when you think about it. Who can God possibly trust more than himself? Easiest question you'll be asked all day and the answer is, you can do better than that? The answer is no one. God could trust no one more than himself.

    10:13-11:04

As I mentioned earlier, God finally kept this promise. A miracle son is born, Isaac after 25 years of waiting. Years go by and as of 22, something unexpected happens. God tells Abraham, "I want you to sacrifice your one and only son." Put yourself in Abraham's shoes. What that must have felt like. I imagine him just being like, "God, what do you mean? What are you talking about? This is the child you promised me. Why? How could this possibly fit into your plans?" But Abraham obeys and just as he's about to sacrifice his son, the angel of the Lord stops him and points to a ram that will be sacrificed as a stand-in for Isaac.

    11:05-11:09

And the Lord reaffirms his promises to Abraham in that moment.

    11:11-11:16

And we hear that he swears an oath that he will keep these promises.

    11:17-11:20

And the author of Hebrews speaks to this in verse 13.

    11:20-11:28

He says this, "For when God made a promise to Abraham, "since he had no one greater by whom to swear, He swore by Himself.

    11:31-11:36

When someone made an oath in the ancient world, they would swear by something or someone greater than themselves.

    11:37-11:41

In the New Testament, people would often swear by the altar in the temple or by the high priest.

    11:42-11:46

But who could God possibly swear to that is greater than Himself?

    11:47-11:51

Again, another easy question with a very easy answer, no one.

    11:52-12:01

This covenant and this oath shine a spotlight on the absolute trustworthiness and credibility of our God.

    12:02-12:07

His character, his integrity are unquestionable, then disputable.

    12:09-12:12

Who in this room would say that they like to work ahead on stuff?

    12:14-12:18

All right, the other end of the spectrum, who's a big procrastinator and you wait to the last possible second?

    12:19-12:21

I don't understand the second group at all.

    12:21-12:22

I don't know how you live your lives.

    12:22-12:29

I don't know how you go every single day being like, "Yeah, I'll do it eventually." I remember in college, almost all of my friends were like you.

    12:30-12:31

    They loved to procrastinate.

    12:31-12:32

They would study at the last second.

    12:33-12:38

I had one friend crank out a 10-page research paper in the 45 minutes before the class that was due.

    12:39-12:41

    I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it.

    12:41-12:48

I watched him with mouth agape, just like, "Are you kidding me?" Now, he got a C on the paper, but hey, that's pretty good for 45 minutes of work, right?

    12:49-12:51

    I couldn't live that way.

    12:51-12:56

Living that way, thinking about it, made my skin crawl with anxiety.

    12:57-13:02

So instead, in college, I developed a weekly schedule that I would follow.

    13:02-13:06

And because of this schedule, I never once stayed up past 11 p.m. doing homework.

    13:07-13:09

I never once pulled an all-nighter.

    13:10-13:15

As many people have told me, I don't think you really went to college then if you never pulled an all-nighter.

    13:16-13:30

But I remember one particular class in my sophomore year, There was a public speaking class, and this class was notoriously difficult, and the professor relished the fact that her class was really, really hard, and that her tests were impossible.

    13:31-13:39

People told me, "Taylor, if you want to do well "on these tests, you really have to study." So I listened, I poured over my notes for hours and hours and hours.

    13:39-13:42

I take the test, get it back the next week, and I got an A on the test.

    13:43-13:56

I was really excited, but then the professor says, "Taylor, I want to talk to you after class." And then she proceeds to ask me one of the most offensive questions I've ever been asked in my entire life.

    13:57-13:57

    Are you ready?

    13:59-14:05

She said, "Taylor, you are the only student "who got an A on this test in the entire class.

    14:05-14:10

"You cheated, didn't you?" It felt like she had punched me in the face.

    14:10-14:11

    I couldn't believe it.

    14:12-14:17

I tried defending myself, but she kept digging in her heels and she said, "Taylor, I know what you did.

    14:17-14:25

"I can't prove it, but I'm gonna be watching you "for the rest of the semester." I walked out of that classroom in a daze.

    14:26-14:31

I went back to my apartment and I told my friend, Seth, about this experience, and he was very angry.

    14:32-14:44

Said, "We're going to her office right now." I was like, "This probably isn't a good idea, but okay." So I follow him, and I didn't really know until after that he already had problems with his professor, So he was like ready for battle.

    14:44-14:51

We get to her office, and he kind of like lays into her about accusing me of cheating with no evidence whatsoever.

    14:52-14:54

And there's one thing that he said that I'll never forget.

    14:55-15:02

He said, if you really knew Taylor, you would know how ridiculous it is to think that he would cheat on this test.

    15:04-15:06

    This intent interrogation actually worked.

    15:07-15:11

She apologized to me, and she backed away from her claims.

    15:12-15:26

I walked away from this experience feeling both vindicated, but also greatly encouraged that my friend had such a high view of my integrity that the possibility of me cheating never once entered into his mind.

    15:28-15:38

You know, in a much greater way, as believers, we should have such a high view of our God that his character, his integrity, should never, ever be in question.

    15:41-15:47

The possibility of him saying one thing, but meaning another, is 0%.

    15:48-15:52

The possibility of him not having our best interest at heart is zero.

    15:53-15:59

He is perfect in every single way imaginable, and his track record is flawless.

    16:00-16:06

Yes, he doesn't always do things the way that you want him to, but that's good, 'cause he always does what is right.

    16:06-16:09

He always does what is best.

    16:11-16:16

But it's so easy to get off track and assume the worst about God.

    16:17-16:20

It's so easy to blame Him for all of our problems.

    16:22-16:34

But in those moments when we do that, we're taking our eyes off the God of the Bible, and we're focusing on a God of our own understanding who bears no resemblance to the one who actually sits on the throne.

    16:35-16:40

This is why we cannot allow our emotions and feelings to dictate what we think and believe.

    16:40-16:54

This is why we must always preach the truth to ourselves daily about who God really is, instead of just listening to that complaint track that often plays in our head over and over and over again.

    16:56-17:07

When you're tempted to think that God doesn't care about you or what you're going through, dig into passages of the Word that speak to the unbreakable, unconditional love of God.

    17:07-17:15

When you doubt the goodness of God, Instead of running away from him, run to him and praise him for all the things he has done in your life.

    17:16-17:24

Continually go through his list of attributes, holy, righteous, loving, all-knowing, all-powerful, gracious, generous.

    17:26-17:27

On and on the list goes.

    17:28-17:31

There is no one greater than our God.

    17:32-17:35

There is no one more trustworthy than our God.

    17:35-17:41

There is no one whose character and integrity unquestionable besides our God.

    17:44-17:45

So why should I trust the Lord?

    17:45-17:49

Number two, because his promises are definitive.

    17:50-17:53

    Because his promises are definitive.

    17:56-17:58

    Let's continue on verses 16 through 18.

    18:00-18:05

"For people swear by something greater than themselves in all their disputes that oath is final for confirmation.

    18:06-18:14

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise, the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath.

    18:15-18:26

So that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

    18:28-18:35

You know, as I said earlier, oaths were extremely common in the ancient world, and they were meant to be taken extremely seriously.

    18:35-18:40

Once you made an oath, you were expected to follow through on what you promised.

    18:41-18:45

Sadly, oaths existed because as human beings, we're not known for our honesty, are we?

    18:46-18:50

Deception comes very naturally to all of us.

    18:50-18:52

And it's easy to tell white lies.

    18:52-18:53

It's easy to stretch the truth.

    18:56-19:03

It's easy to say one thing that's not true so you can get someone off your back, or it makes other people think more highly of you.

    19:04-19:08

It's easy to go back on your word and make excuses for why you can't follow through.

    19:10-19:15

Sometimes we break our word intentionally and sometimes we break our word unintentionally.

    19:15-19:20

We can make hasty commitments that we don't really fully think through and count the costs.

    19:20-19:23

We don't think if we actually have the time and the bandwidth to follow through.

    19:25-19:25

    But guess what?

    19:26-19:32

While this is true of human beings and very often of you and I, this is not true of God whatsoever.

    19:34-19:36

I love the bluntness of Numbers 23 19.

    19:37-19:42

God is not a man that he should lie or a son of man that he should change his mind.

    19:43-19:47

Simply put, God is not like us at all.

    19:47-19:50

He does not share our faults and our failures.

    19:51-19:56

The author of Hebrews makes it abundantly clear, it is impossible for God to lie.

    19:57-20:00

It's not just that he will not lie, he cannot lie.

    20:01-20:07

It's not just that he will keep his promises to us, he must keep his promises to us.

    20:07-20:10

God cannot violate his own holiness.

    20:12-20:22

As I studied this passage this week, I was continually blown away by the reality that God made an oath to Abraham even though he didn't have to.

    20:23-20:25

We should take God at his word.

    20:26-20:27

We should take what he says on face value.

    20:30-20:36

As I studied this passage, warranties for cars, appliances, and other electronics came to my mind.

    20:36-20:38

You know, why are warranties offered?

    20:39-20:43

Because companies do not have 100% confidence in their products.

    20:44-20:47

They offer you a worst case scenario option.

    20:47-20:53

But very often, if you read the fine print, these warranties are geared towards the company and not the consumer.

    20:55-21:01

I don't know about you, but very often, the built-in warranty for a product expires, and that's the time when the product's like, you know what, I'm done.

    21:01-21:03

It just quits and just ruins my entire day.

    21:04-21:08

Who else gets a steady stream of extended car warranty calls?

    21:09-21:11

Anybody else besides me being tortured by these people?

    21:12-21:13

You know what's the worst part about it?

    21:13-21:14

Let me just rant for a second.

    21:15-21:20

It used to be they would have like an area code from somewhere outside the state, but no.

    21:20-21:23

Now they have 412 and 724 area codes.

    21:23-21:26

As a pastor, I'm like, oh, well, this might be someone in the church.

    21:27-21:30

And it's like, hello, we'd like to talk to you about your extended car warranty.

    21:31-21:32

    It's like, ah, end.

    21:33-21:36

Every single time I get so angry about it, I rant over.

    21:37-21:38

It feels good to talk about that.

    21:39-21:48

You know, typically I don't even bother with the add-on warranties for a TV or a toaster or a microwave 'cause they're often more trouble than they're worth.

    21:50-22:00

But with this oath the Lord offers Abraham, he gives him a 100% trustworthy warranty that will not expire, go bad, or disappoint.

    22:01-22:05

But again, why did God do this if he didn't have to?

    22:06-22:07

    Let's read our passage again.

    22:08-22:10

The author of Hebrews clearly tells us why.

    22:11-22:31

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs the promise, the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, that's the promise and the oath, in which it is impossible for God to lie, We who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us.

    22:32-22:35

So why did God swear an oath to Abraham?

    22:37-22:43

He did it to stoop down to his level, to meet him where he is at and accommodate his weak faith.

    22:44-22:53

God knew how hard it was for Abraham to trust in him, so he gave him a greater sense of security with this oath.

    22:55-23:00

And we're told that he made this oath to encourage the heirs of the promise after Abraham.

    23:01-23:15

If you are a follower of Christ, then you are an heir of the promise made to Abraham, because we'll talk about in a few minutes, Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham to bless the entire world through his family line.

    23:16-23:20

This oath should be a comfort and encouragement to us.

    23:23-23:25

God knows how weak we are.

    23:26-23:28

God knows how hard it is for us to trust him.

    23:30-23:35

God knows how hard it is for us to live by faith and not by sight every single day.

    23:36-23:40

No one knows how weak, needy, frustrated, and confused you are like God does.

    23:42-23:45

As you've been learning a lot over the past month, God gets us.

    23:45-23:48

He knows you better than you know yourself.

    23:49-23:58

He knows that you need something solid and substantial to grab a hold of when you're going through a difficult season, when you're going through the storms of life.

    23:59-24:12

This is why He has gifted us with His word so that we can study about the promises He has kept in the past, about the promises He is fulfilling right now, and the promises down the road that He will fulfill in the future.

    24:13-24:14

This is why we have a church family.

    24:15-24:23

So just sitting on our own, letting our fears and doubts take over, we can have brothers and sisters encouraging us, speaking the truth into our lives.

    24:23-24:32

This is why we have the Holy Spirit, who has been sent to live within us as our comforter, our teacher, and our guide who points us to these promises every single day.

    24:34-24:42

God is so gracious in offering us helpful reminders to grab a hold of, because he knows how forgetful and ignorant we all are.

    24:44-24:50

We must constantly choose to set our hearts and our minds upon the promises of God.

    24:51-24:56

Because as the author of Hebrews tells us, these are a refuge in times of trouble.

    24:57-25:00

Let me just list off some of the promises of God that we see in his word.

    25:01-25:10

In John 6, 47, Jesus promises that those who place their faith and trust in him alone for salvation will have eternal life.

    25:11-25:20

In Romans 8, 28, we are promised that all those who love God and are called according to his purposes All things will work out for good for them.

    25:21-25:28

In Romans 8, 38 through 39, we are promised that nothing will separate us from the love of God and Christ Jesus, our Lord.

    25:28-25:39

In Philippians 1, 6, we are promised that God will finish the work that he began in us at the moment of salvation, and he will take us across the finish line of this life and into heaven.

    25:40-25:43

God doesn't have any unfinished or abandoned projects lying around.

    25:43-25:45

He always finishes what he starts.

    25:46-25:50

In Ephesians 2.10, we are promised that God has a purpose for our lives.

    25:50-25:54

There are good works He has prepared for us to carry out.

    25:56-26:07

And I'll steal Pastor Jeff's favorite promise from Revelation chapter 21, in which we're promised, that things will not always be as they are now, that Jesus will make all things new.

    26:09-26:11

    These promises are definitive.

    26:12-26:14

These promises are a set guarantee.

    26:15-26:19

Keep your eyes fixed on these things at all times and never let go.

    26:20-26:23

Never let go of the hope set before you.

    26:24-26:27

Finally, why should I trust the Lord?

    26:28-26:29

Because his son is a steady anchor.

    26:30-26:33

Because his son is a steady anchor.

    26:36-26:38

Let's wrap up with verses 19 through 20.

    26:40-26:55

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, A hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

    26:57-27:02

So the author of Hebrews expands upon the hope he was talking about in verse 18.

    27:02-27:07

He says this hope is rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

    27:07-27:10

Ultimately, our hope is found in Him and Him alone.

    27:12-27:21

As I said a few minutes ago, Jesus is the final fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham to bless the whole world through his family line.

    27:23-27:28

Isn't this a random coincidence that Jesus was born to a Jewish woman over 2,000 years ago?

    27:28-27:34

To fulfill the promise, Jesus had to come through the line of David, through the line of Abraham.

    27:35-27:44

Through his life, death, resurrection, and ascension, Jesus has secured a salvation that is available to anyone and everyone who turns to Him.

    27:45-27:54

It doesn't matter what race, nationality, or family you come from, the blessing of eternal life and salvation is available to all.

    27:57-27:57

    How is this possible?

    27:59-28:14

We're told in the passage we just read, and we're told that we have a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

    28:16-28:19

We've talked a lot about Jesus being our high priest over the past month.

    28:20-28:30

As a quick refresher, once a year on the Day of Atonement, the high priest would enter into the Holy of Holies to make a sacrifice for his sin, as well as the sins of the people of Israel.

    28:30-28:33

He would pass through the veil to go through the Holy of Holies.

    28:33-28:43

and this curtain, this veil, represented the fact that we are separated from a holy and perfect God because of our sin.

    28:44-28:49

The Israelites needed a mediator, a go-between, to enter into the Holy of Holies on their behalf.

    28:51-28:51

    But guess what?

    28:52-29:06

As Jesus died on the cross, the curtain in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom to represent the awesome, amazing reality that access to God is now available through his son and high priest.

    29:08-29:14

Through his sacrifice, Jesus entered into the inner place, into the heavenly holy of holies as our forerunner.

    29:16-29:16

    What does that mean?

    29:16-29:17

I'm not talking about the vehicle.

    29:19-29:20

    What is a forerunner?

    29:21-29:24

A forerunner is someone who goes on up ahead and prepares a way.

    29:25-29:31

A forerunner is a trailblazer who breaks new ground so that others can follow in their footsteps.

    29:32-29:38

Jesus paved the way for those who believe in him to have a personal relationship with the Father.

    29:38-29:44

Jesus paved the way for you to enjoy the presence of a loving God, both now and forever.

    29:44-29:46

You don't need to go through a religious ritual.

    29:46-29:49

You don't need to go through me or Pastor Jeff to talk to God.

    29:50-29:58

All you need to do is follow in the footsteps of your Savior, your high priest, and your forerunner who made a way for you.

    30:01-30:06

As Jesus said in John 14 6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.

    30:07-30:13

No one comes to the Father except through me." What an awesome hope we have in Jesus.

    30:14-30:15

    He is our everything.

    30:16-30:19

And without Him, we have nothing, and we're going nowhere.

    30:21-30:28

And the author of Hebrews says that this hope in Jesus is a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

    30:30-30:32

Does anybody else besides me need that today?

    30:33-30:36

A sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.

    30:37-30:40

Do you need someone who is steadfast and loyal?

    30:41-30:45

Do you need an anchor that will help you not to drift away?

    30:47-30:48

Look no further than Jesus Christ.

    30:49-30:52

Everything and everyone will let you down besides him.

    30:54-30:56

Who or what are you looking to as your anchor right now?

    30:58-30:58

    Is it your job?

    31:00-31:02

I hate to break it to you, but you could be fired tomorrow.

    31:04-31:06

You're looking to money and success.

    31:06-31:07

    That is a bottomless pit.

    31:07-31:08

    You'll never have enough.

    31:08-31:09

    You'll never achieve enough.

    31:10-31:13

The opinion of others, I can tell you that's not a good idea.

    31:14-31:19

That is a up and down, left and right, crazy roller coaster that will change day by day.

    31:19-31:20

But you know who never changes?

    31:21-31:21

    Jesus Christ.

    31:24-31:26

All of the things I just mentioned are not anchors.

    31:27-31:30

They are unsteady rafts that will sink in the storms of this life.

    31:31-31:35

Only Jesus provides eternal security and stability.

    31:35-31:38

Only Jesus is a rock solid anchor for your soul.

    31:39-31:42

Your eternal position in his kingdom can never be stolen from you.

    31:43-31:45

Your identity in him can never be stripped away from you.

    31:45-31:49

Your purpose in Him can never, ever be thwarted.

    31:52-31:56

Will you please bow your heads, close your eyes, and then I can come forward.

    31:59-32:02

I want you to spend some time with the Lord.

    32:04-32:09

And honestly ask yourself, in what areas of my life am I having a hard time trusting the Lord?

    32:11-32:20

Maybe you're having a hard time trusting Him with your finances, maybe it's with your family, things are really rough right now, and you have a hard time believing that God knows what he is doing.

    32:21-32:24

Maybe you're struggling with believing that God really cares about you.

    32:26-32:36

Go to him right now and ask him to restore your hope in his unquestionable character, his definitive promises, and the steady anchor that is his son.

    32:37-32:40

Lay your doubts, your worries, and your anxieties before him.

    32:40-32:43

cast your burdens on him, because he alone can carry them.

    32:47-32:58

Father, we come to you and we thank you that your character is unquestionable, that your promises are definitive, and your son is a steady anchor for our souls at all times.

    32:59-33:05

Lord, forgive us for the many ways we doubt you, for the many ways we run away from you when we should run towards you.

    33:07-33:12

Lord, there are many issues, struggles, worries, anxieties in this room today.

    33:13-33:14

I don't know all of them, but you do.

    33:16-33:19

I pray that we would all lay them down at the foot of the cross.

    33:22-33:31

We would believe that you truly care about us, that you truly know what you're doing, that you will always keep your word to us, Lord, that you alone are trustworthy at all times.

    33:35-33:51

we lift up this week to you we pray that we would go throughout this week not ridden with anxiety and fear but filled with hope and confidence in you we thank you in advance what you are to be doing our lives this week Lord in Jesus name amen.
