All right, so you can turn your Bibles to 2 Peter 1, verses 16 through 21.

    01:35-01:42

And as you're turning there, I want you to join me in exploring an annoying experience that happens to me on almost a weekly basis.

    01:42-01:49

You know, Kate and my kids are out of the house, I'm getting ready to leave, I grab my keys, grab my wallet, head to the car, and I head out.

    01:51-01:55

But then a few minutes into the drive, a question pops up into my mind.

    01:57-01:58

Did I close the garage door?

    01:59-02:01

Does that happen to anybody else besides me like every single day?

    02:03-02:06

And I answer that question by saying, yeah, of course I did.

    02:06-02:11

But then another question burrows its way into my mind that I hate with my entire being.

    02:11-02:13

    Are you sure about that?

    02:13-02:14

    You sure about that?

    02:14-02:22

It's like, ah, and I turn around, I go back, and of course the garage door is never actually opened, it's always closed.

    02:22-02:27

But time after time, I still turn around because of that question, are you sure about that?

    02:28-02:30

It's not even just my garage door.

    02:31-02:33

It's things like, oh, I made lunch, I used the oven.

    02:33-02:35

I'm like, wait, did I turn the oven off?

    02:35-02:36

    Is the house gonna explode?

    02:36-02:37

Did I turn around and do a 180?

    02:38-02:40

Or even, oh, I left a window open.

    02:40-02:41

I think it might rain later.

    02:41-02:43

I had to turn around and do it once again.

    02:43-02:52

That question, are you sure about that, time and time again, stirs up this hornet's nest of doubt in my mind.

    02:53-03:05

And to be honest with you, One of the most embarrassing things I do when we go on vacation, I'll actually take a picture of our closed garage door to knock down that question of are you sure about that?

    03:07-03:17

As much as you may be laughing at my expense right now, I think we can all admit that we deal with this question to a certain extent when it comes to more serious matters and issues of our faith.

    03:18-03:21

We believe that God is real.

    03:21-03:29

We believe that he has made a way of salvation for us, but at times that question rears its ugly head.

    03:29-03:30

    Are you sure about that?

    03:31-03:32

    Are you sure about that?

    03:32-03:36

And we go through seasons of discouragement and doubt.

    03:37-03:43

We know that the Lord loves us and cares about every single aspect of our lives, but again, that question nags us.

    03:43-03:45

    Are you sure about that?

    03:45-03:50

Do you really think that God cares about little insignificant you?

    03:52-04:00

We know what the Bible says about marriage, sexuality, and gender, but our society keeps yelling that question of, are you sure about that?

    04:00-04:03

    Did God really say that?

    04:04-04:14

As we saw in the introduction video a few moments ago, dealing with this question isn't a new development, as Satan has been asking it since the very beginning.

    04:15-04:22

Adam and Eve are set up in a beautiful garden, are given an awesome mission of taking care of God's creation and filling the earth.

    04:22-04:26

But they're told that there is one thing they're not to do.

    04:26-04:27

    And what is that?

    04:28-04:32

Do not eat of this one tree in the garden.

    04:33-04:34

    That's it.

    04:35-04:42

But Satan weasels his way into the garden in the form of a serpent and asks that question, are you sure about that?

    04:42-04:46

Did God really say that you should not eat of any tree in the garden?

    04:47-04:48

You see what Satan does there?

    04:49-04:51

He twists what God actually said.

    04:51-05:04

God said, "Don't eat of this one tree." And Satan asked, "Did God really say "you can't eat of any tree in the garden?" He sows that seed of doubt in Eve's mind.

    05:05-05:10

A seed of doubt in the goodness and trustworthiness of God.

    05:11-05:23

As I already said, Satan has been using this tactic for thousands of years, and we have to prepare to fight against it, No matter how mature and theologically secure we think that we are.

    05:24-05:30

So this morning, we're taking a bit of a break from Hebrews to start a four-week series called Did God Really Say?

    05:30-05:38

And we're gonna unpack important doctrines and scriptural realities that our enemy constantly tries to attack and undermine.

    05:39-05:58

And sadly, he's been extremely successful in this endeavor, as many churches have caved and compromised on a variety of key issues because of societal pressure, because of a desire to be liked by everyone, and in general, because of a lack of confidence in the good news of Jesus Christ.

    05:59-06:04

But at Harvest Bible Chapel, let us refuse to become this kind of statistic.

    06:04-06:12

Let us refuse to follow our hearts, trust in our own opinions, and let our feelings dictate our choices.

    06:13-06:21

Let us stand firm on what God has definitively said instead of falling prey to Satan's pathetic question of, did God really say?

    06:23-06:28

So before we dive into our specific passage and topic of study this morning, let's go to the Lord and ask for His help.

    06:31-06:33

Father, we thank you so much for this time.

    06:33-06:36

We can come together as your people to study your word.

    06:38-06:46

Lord, I pray that you would speak in and through me, Lord, and as I preach, Lord, you'd be preaching a much better message in people's hearts and minds, Lord.

    06:47-06:56

I pray that you would challenge us, you would convict us, you would encourage us, you would build us up, but at the same time, you would tear things down in our lives that need to be torn down.

    06:57-06:58

I pray that we'd submit ourselves to you.

    07:00-07:01

    In Jesus' name, amen.

    07:03-07:13

So the best way to kick off this series is to focus our time and attention on the thing that Satan tries to challenge to undercut the most, and that is the word of God itself.

    07:14-07:20

Our enemy knows that this book contains the message of eternal life and salvation.

    07:20-07:28

He knows that followers of Christ can't grow, mature, and become who God wants them to be apart from spending time within its pages.

    07:29-07:34

So he'll do whatever he can to keep this book out of people's hands.

    07:35-07:41

He'll do whatever it takes to distract us that this book gathers dust on our nightstands at home.

    07:42-08:03

Even worse than that, he loves to deceive people into misinterpreting the Bible, into reading their own meaning into a text, and taking a certain passage out of context, where he loves to use people to use this book as a religious weight upon people that they can never hope to lift on their own.

    08:04-08:13

The Bible can either be an effective weapon used by your enemy against you, or it can be a powerful weapon used by you against your enemy.

    08:14-08:15

    The choice is yours.

    08:16-08:28

So please open your Bibles to 2 Peter 1:16-21, and we're gonna unpack why the Bible is worthy of our time, attention, and full assurance.

    08:29-08:31

Let's begin by reading verse 16.

    08:31-08:32

    Peter writes this.

    08:33-08:54

"For we did not follow cleverly devised myths "We made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." So we're outlined this morning, I can trust the Bible because, number one, it is not a myth, but historical fact.

    08:55-08:58

It is not a myth, but historical fact.

    09:01-09:10

So throughout this letter, Peter calls out and debunks false teachers who are trying to oppose the gospel of Jesus Christ and the reality of his second coming.

    09:11-09:17

Like Satan in the Garden of Eden, these false teachers are sowing seeds of doubt, disunity, and destruction.

    09:17-09:32

And some of these people are passing around the lie that the story of Jesus' divine ministry, his miraculous resurrection, his death on the cross is just that, it's just a story.

    09:32-09:34

It's a story with no basis in reality.

    09:35-09:36

    It's just another legend.

    09:36-09:39

It's just another collection of myths.

    09:39-09:45

Christianity is just a bunch of imaginative fables that teach us important lessons about life.

    09:46-09:51

In their minds, Jesus isn't God, but he was a man made out to be God.

    09:52-10:00

But Peter makes it crystal clear in the passage we just read that he and the other apostles aren't peddling myths, fables, legends.

    10:01-10:05

They aren't writing a fictional fantasy novel like Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter.

    10:05-10:11

He says that he is making known the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    10:12-10:16

And he says they were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

    10:17-10:19

    Eyewitnesses of his majesty.

    10:20-10:21

    What's he talking about there?

    10:22-10:32

Well, he's talking about the historical account of Jesus' transfiguration in which he took Peter, James, and John to the top of the mountain to unveil his glory to them.

    10:33-10:39

He popped the hood, so to speak, on his humanity to display the engine of his divinity.

    10:40-10:46

We read this account in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and we'll discuss it in greater detail in a few minutes.

    10:46-10:57

But Peter points to this firsthand witnessing of the transfiguration to prove that he is a reliable witness who should be listened to.

    10:58-11:04

He's denying the claims of his opponents that Jesus isn't God, and he's not really coming back someday.

    11:05-11:06

He's saying, listen, it's all true.

    11:07-11:09

    Every single word of it.

    11:09-11:23

Jesus first came in humility to suffer and die to save sinners, but he will come back one day in glorious power, and I know this is gonna happen because I saw him unveil his majesty on that mountain years ago.

    11:25-11:31

Peter is making a point here you don't want to hammer into your brain so that it will stick there forever.

    11:31-11:37

And that point is, the word of God is historical fact.

    11:38-11:42

The word of God is historical fact.

    11:43-11:45

I love what Jesus says in John 10, 35.

    11:45-11:53

"Scripture cannot be broken." The word of God is 100% true and reliable.

    11:53-12:00

It is not a flimsy glass vase that will easily shatter, a strong diamond that will bear up under any pressure.

    12:01-12:04

No one and nothing can disprove this book.

    12:04-12:13

No one can pull on a thread to unravel it, even though many have tried, and many think they have succeeded, but they have not.

    12:14-12:22

You know, two men spring to mind who sought to disprove the Bible and the claims of Jesus, but their mission actually backfired on them in the process and they became Christians.

    12:23-12:30

The first is Josh McDowell, who was agnostic in college, he tried to write a paper that disproved Christianity.

    12:31-12:35

As he examined the evidence, he realized that Jesus is real.

    12:36-12:40

He realized that he is savior, he is Lord, and he gave his life to Christ.

    12:41-12:57

And he wrote extremely famous books like "More Than a Carpenter" and "Evidence That Demands a Verdict." Another well-known man is Lee Strobel, an investigative journalist who sought to debunk the claims of Christ, but actually debunked his own atheism in the process.

    12:58-13:17

And he has written a ton of books like "The Case for Christ," "The Case for a Creator," "The Case for Faith." You know, sadly, this isn't the case for every single person who tries to poke holes in the Bible, because many people choose to harden their hearts and close their eyes to the reality before them.

    13:19-13:27

Listen, if you're a Christian, you're going to face opposition and disagreement about your faith and the book that you base your life upon.

    13:28-13:30

And I want you to listen to me here, please pay attention.

    13:31-13:33

    That's okay, it's okay.

    13:34-13:37

The Bible is not gonna be proven wrong someday.

    13:37-13:40

Jesus will not be discovered as a fraud.

    13:40-13:47

As I already told you, people have been trying for thousands of years and they'll keep trying and failing until the end of time.

    13:49-13:53

But maybe you're sitting here and you're unconvinced about the reliability of the Bible.

    13:54-14:00

Maybe you're here today and you would like to have some evidence to lean back on or point others to.

    14:01-14:05

So let's spend a few minutes unpacking some of the evidence that backs up the Bible.

    14:06-14:15

Because I want us to be confident that this book has an unbreakable spine that we can build our lives, that we can build our families upon.

    14:16-14:21

All right, letter A, the Bible is verified by eyewitness testimony.

    14:21-14:25

The Bible is verified by eyewitness testimony.

    14:27-14:37

As you already mentioned, Peter is emphatic that he witnessed the transfiguration of Jesus with his own two eyes, and he also had a front row seat to his entire ministry.

    14:38-14:44

His two letters are backed up by this firsthand knowledge of Christ and the birth of the early church.

    14:45-14:55

But beyond the apostle Peter, so much of the Bible is written by men who were actually there, or is based off the firsthand accounts of those who were actually there.

    14:56-14:59

Luke makes this abundantly clear in the first several verses of his gospel.

    14:59-15:33

He writes this, "In so much as many have undertaken "to compile a narrative of the things "that has been accomplished among us, "just as those who were from the beginning "were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word "have delivered them to us, "It seemed good to me, having followed all things closely "for some time, to write an orderly account for you, "most excellent Theophilus, that you may have certainty "concerning the things that you have been taught." That you may have certainty considering the things that you have been taught.

    15:34-15:50

Luke is saying that we can have certainty that his gospel is based on the first-hand account of disciples and other men and women who saw Jesus heal, who saw him teach, who saw him suffer, die, rise again and ascend back into heaven.

    15:51-15:58

Mark's gospel was based off Peter's firsthand account and Matthew and John written by those apostles themselves.

    15:59-16:02

The Bible was backed up by eyewitness testimony.

    16:03-16:07

Letter B, the Bible is verified by archeological evidence.

    16:07-16:09

    Archeological evidence.

    16:12-16:18

You know, I can give a really long lecture on how archeology backs up the claims of the Bible, but don't worry, I'm not gonna do that this morning.

    16:19-16:21

Let me just give you some of the highlights.

    16:22-16:27

In 1993, a stone tablet was found that dates back to the ninth century BC.

    16:27-16:33

And it has an inscription that references the house of David.

    16:33-16:39

This tablet backs up the reality that David wasn't a made up king of myth, but a historical figure.

    16:39-16:46

Before we had this, we couldn't definitively prove that David was a real person, but now we can.

    16:47-17:06

In 1947, the shepherds made the biggest archeological discovery of the 20th century when they came across a cave by the Dead Sea that is filled with Old Testament scrolls and fragments that have been sitting there for 2000 years, and some dated back to 300 BC.

    17:08-17:20

Over the next several years, they checked all the other caves and they found more documents, 800 fragments from 190 biblical scrolls and an entire scroll of Isaiah was found.

    17:22-17:24

You may be asking, Taylor, why is this a big deal?

    17:24-17:38

Because this goes a long way in us being able to show, to prove that the 39 books of the Old Testament were written before the New Testament and that the prophecies made about Jesus weren't written after the fact.

    17:38-17:41

They were written before he came to this earth.

    17:43-17:50

And speaking of manuscripts, we have more fragments and complete copies of the New Testament than any other ancient document by far.

    17:51-17:57

We have over 5,800 fragments or completed manuscripts of the New Testament.

    17:58-18:00

Do you wanna know who comes in second place?

    18:01-18:08

That's Homer's "The Iliad," and it comes in with 643 complete or fragmented manuscripts.

    18:08-18:09

That's not even kind of close.

    18:10-18:13

    5,800, 643.

    18:14-18:18

No archeological finds or digs have been able to disprove the Bible.

    18:18-18:26

With each passing year, more and more evidence continues to pile up for the historical authenticity of God's word.

    18:28-18:33

All right, finally, the Bible is verified by scientific accuracy.

    18:34-18:35

    Scientific accuracy.

    18:36-18:40

Who has ever heard someone say, "Oh, well, faith and science don't mix.

    18:40-18:45

You can't trust in the Bible and science at the same time." Who's ever heard someone say something like that?

    18:46-18:48

We've all heard different variations of that.

    18:48-18:51

Maybe you don't know how to respond.

    18:51-18:54

You don't know what to say when someone makes that kind of claim.

    18:56-19:01

Well, I want you to be assured that science and the Bible are not enemies, but friends.

    19:02-19:06

The Bible isn't a science textbook, but does make correct scientific claims.

    19:07-19:11

In Genesis, we're told that God created animals after their own kind.

    19:11-19:20

And no matter what evolutionists say, they can never prove from the fossil record that one species completely morphs into a different species over time.

    19:21-19:22

    It's just not possible.

    19:23-19:26

There's no evidence that we come from primates or single-celled organisms.

    19:28-19:39

Geology proves the flood actually happened in that fossils and bones were catastrophically deposited over a matter of minutes.

    19:41-19:50

The Old Testament speaks to such things as the water cycle, sea currents, the predictable pattern of the stars, and the reality that the earth hangs on nothing.

    19:52-19:58

The Bible was way ahead of the curve on these scientific claims because it is written by the creator himself.

    20:01-20:05

You know, I really don't even have to defend the Bible because the Bible defends itself.

    20:06-20:14

Its reliability, its accuracy is abundantly clear with those with the eyes to see and the ears to hear.

    20:16-20:25

My favorite preacher of all time, Charles Spurgeon, once urged his congregation not to view scripture as a defenseless animal that we have to help, but as a roaring lion.

    20:26-20:29

He writes this, "Pardon me if I offer a quiet suggestion.

    20:30-20:31

"Open the door and let the lion out.

    20:31-20:33

"He will take care of himself.

    20:33-20:37

"He no sooner goes forth in his strength "than his assailants flee.

    20:37-20:41

"The way to meet infidelity, unbelief, "is to spread the Bible.

    20:41-20:49

"The answer to objections against the Bible is the Bible." The Bible defends itself.

    20:51-20:59

Secondly, I can trust the Bible because it is not an incomplete guide, but the only source of light in a dark world.

    21:00-21:04

It is not an incomplete guide, but the only source of light in a dark world.

    21:09-21:17

So let's read verses 17 through 18, which unpacks Peter's take on the transfiguration in even greater detail.

    21:18-21:45

He says this, "For when Jesus received honor and glory "from God the Father, and the voice was born to him "by the majestic glory, this is my beloved Son "with whom I am well pleased, "we ourselves heard this very voice born from heaven, "for we were with him on that holy mountain." Just imagine what this must have been like to see, hear, and experience.

    21:46-21:59

Seeing Jesus Christ unveil his glory, to hear the voice of God the Father speak out of heaven, affirming who Jesus is, This is my beloved son.

    22:00-22:05

And we're told in the gospels that two Old Testament rock stars show up on the scene and stand next to Jesus.

    22:05-22:06

    And who are these men?

    22:07-22:16

Moses and Elijah, who Peter has heard about on an endless loop since he was a kid, from his parents, from his family, from his rabbis.

    22:17-22:20

This must have been one of the highlights of Peter's life.

    22:21-22:26

I don't know about you, but I wish I could have experienced something like this.

    22:26-22:28

    All of us do, right?

    22:29-22:34

But Peter goes on to say something astounding in verse 19.

    22:35-22:37

As Pastor Jeff often says, this is game-changing stuff.

    22:39-22:49

He writes this, "And we have something more sure, the prophetic word." What's he saying there?

    22:51-22:58

He's saying, hey, this encounter was fantastic and I'll never forget it about it as long as I live, but we have something better.

    22:58-23:02

We have something more sure, the word of God.

    23:03-23:04

    Isn't that amazing?

    23:06-23:09

But some of you may be thinking, how can that possibly be true?

    23:10-23:13

How can Peter write that and mean that?

    23:14-23:21

You know, if I offered you a free and inclusive trip to Hawaii or a typed up description of the trip, what would you pick?

    23:23-23:24

You'd pick the actual trip, right?

    23:25-23:33

What if I offered you the best steak that you could possibly imagine grilled by the greatest chef in the world or a typed up review of how the steak tasted?

    23:34-23:35

    What would you pick?

    23:36-23:40

You would pick the experience of actually eating the steak.

    23:40-23:51

So how can this book that we read possibly be better and more sure than this kind of physical and tangible experience that Peter had?

    23:51-23:52

    How is that possible?

    23:54-24:02

Well, as great, as important, as impactful as experiences are, they are here one minute, but quickly fade to memory the next.

    24:03-24:12

Experiences in this life come and go, but we're told in Isaiah chapter 40 that the word of the Lord endures forever.

    24:13-24:15

It's unchanging and it's not going anywhere.

    24:15-24:29

Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, "but my words will never pass away." This book has a supernatural power that we should not underestimate or we cannot possibly overestimate.

    24:31-24:36

No matter what our society says, this book is relevant and it is life-changing.

    24:39-24:55

You know, over the years, I've had a lot of people ask me, "Taylor, how can you possibly believe "a book that was written over 2,000 years ago "is true and relevant to your life?" And I have a lot of responses to that question but I always say something similar to this.

    24:56-25:02

Because it is the only thing that possibly makes sense of this crazy world that we live in.

    25:02-25:11

It tells the truth about why things are so broken, why people act the way that they do, and it points to the only way to truly change.

    25:13-25:21

When I try to step outside of my biblical worldview and look at life, it is hopeless, it is meaningless, it is confusing, it is chaotic.

    25:21-25:28

But when I look at this world, when I look at this life, the lens of scripture, I see the hand of God at work.

    25:28-25:31

I see that he is in control.

    25:34-25:36

And Peter says something similar at the end of verse 19.

    25:37-25:50

And we have something more short, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

    25:52-26:00

According to Peter, we should pay attention to the Bible because it is a bright light that pierces the darkness of this world.

    26:00-26:08

It is our only hope of seeing Jesus Christ in this life until the day we finally see him face to face and become fully like him.

    26:09-26:14

It is a complete and definitive guide that tells us where to go and where not to go.

    26:15-26:20

Why would we put this lamp down and just sit in the blackness.

    26:20-26:24

Why would we put this map away and just try to forge our own paths?

    26:26-26:27

But we do it all the time, don't we?

    26:29-26:36

We feel the nudging of the Holy Spirit to spend time in his word, and we think, I'm just too tired, I'll do it tomorrow.

    26:37-26:40

I'm just so busy right now, I can't do that.

    26:43-26:49

Reading scripture should be as important to us as drinking water and eating food.

    26:50-26:58

Jesus said, and Deuteronomy tells us, man does not live by bread alone, but every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

    26:58-27:02

Imagine saying to yourself, you know what, I know I should eat this week, but I'm just too busy.

    27:02-27:03

I'm just too, everything's just too hectic.

    27:04-27:07

Maybe when things slow down next week, I'll finally eat.

    27:08-27:12

Your stomach would go insane, not leave you alone until you fed it.

    27:13-27:22

May our spiritual stomachs not even let us go one day without eating the meat of God's word and drinking from the fountain of life-giving truth.

    27:24-27:32

Finally, the Bible can be trusted because it is not the opinion of man, but an inspired message from God.

    27:33-27:37

It is not the opinion of man, but an inspired message from God.

    27:39-27:40

    (congregation laughing)

    27:43-27:49

You'll often hear people say, you can't trust the Bible because it was written by a bunch of dudes with their own opinions and agendas.

    27:50-27:53

Let me ask you two really important questions.

    27:54-27:56

Was this book written by God, yes or no?

    27:58-27:58

    All right.

    27:59-28:01

Was this book written by men, yes or no?

    28:03-28:06

Both are true at the same exact time.

    28:07-28:12

And Peter explains this process more in verses 20 through 21.

    28:12-28:16

And he proves to us that this book isn't just a man-made document.

    28:16-28:40

He says, "Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of scripture comes from someone's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." So God didn't just take over these men's bodies and use them as mindless pens to take down dictation.

    28:41-28:44

We're told they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

    28:45-28:51

And this word in the Greek is pharaoh, and it brings to mind the picture of a ship being driven by the wind.

    28:53-28:57

I'll give you another example of the word pharaoh and what it tries to communicate.

    28:58-29:02

You know, it took me a lot longer than it should have to learn how to ride a bike.

    29:03-29:13

And I'm too embarrassed to even admit how long it took me and at what age I learned, but if you corner my dad and my sister after service, I'm sure they'll happily tell you all the gory details.

    29:14-29:25

So an undisclosed number of years ago, my dad would teach me how to ride a bike by grabbing onto the handles, and as I pedaled, he would point me in the right direction, right?

    29:26-29:28

He was holding me the entire time.

    29:28-29:33

And whenever he felt like I had my balance, he would let go and let me go by myself.

    29:33-29:37

And this led to a lot of me falling over and literally jumping in the grass.

    29:38-29:39

    Eventually I got it.

    29:40-29:41

I don't wanna tell you when, but eventually.

    29:44-29:51

But in those moments when my dad was holding on to the handlebars, I was in a sense still riding my bike.

    29:52-29:57

I was pedaling, I was doing the work, but my dad was carrying me along.

    29:57-30:02

He was pointing me in the right direction to the right destination.

    30:03-30:06

And the Bible was written in a very similar way.

    30:06-30:14

The biblical authors didn't just have their eyes go into the back of their heads and go into a trance and then wake up whenever God was done writing a book of the Bible.

    30:14-30:22

These men put in the time, they put in effort to write, but every single word was guided by the Holy Spirit.

    30:23-30:37

God used these men's different personalities, backgrounds, and styles to create unique but in the end, all the honor, all the glory, all the credit goes to God and God alone.

    30:38-30:48

How this whole process worked out is a mystery, but we can have confidence that every single word of this book is there because of the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

    30:50-31:02

So if God himself is ultimately the author of this book, then we need to dedicate ourselves to being faithful to what he has definitively said and submitting to his authority.

    31:03-31:08

You know, English classes across this country will teach, you know, the intent of the author really doesn't matter.

    31:08-31:12

What matters is the meaning that you bring to a book or a poem.

    31:13-31:15

It means what you says that it means.

    31:16-31:18

It means what you want it to mean.

    31:20-31:24

And people try to take that and apply it to the Bible.

    31:25-31:28

We can bring our own meaning to a text.

    31:28-31:32

We can bring our own experiences to it, and it changes based on who reads it.

    31:33-31:35

What do we think about that, thumbs up or thumbs down?

    31:37-31:40

    That's complete and utter garbage.

    31:41-31:46

Either the Bible means what it says that it means, or it means nothing at all.

    31:47-31:54

You know, as a preacher, I refuse to put words into God's mouth or take words out of his mouth.

    31:54-32:05

We have a wide bench of preachers at this church who are dedicated to telling you what God wants you to hear instead of just telling you what your flesh wants you to hear.

    32:06-32:10

We do this because we want to be found as faithful handlers of the word of God.

    32:10-32:14

We have to give an account to God someday for the sermons that we preach.

    32:15-32:20

We want to deliver God's unfiltered truth instead of watering it down like a batch of McDonald's orange juice.

    32:21-32:22

You know what I'm talking about, right?

    32:22-32:23

    Their orange juice is terrible.

    32:23-32:24

    (congregation laughing)

    32:26-32:52

Even though we're not perfect preachers by any stretch of the imagination, and a few weeks ago we actually spent time talking about all the ways we wanna grow and improve and get better, Pastor Jeff, myself, and men such as Rich Sprunk, Justin Cady, Mike Wolski, Matt Cole, Dan Thompson, James Austin, Brian Krause, and on on the list goes, we are committed to getting it right when we stand behind this pulpit.

    32:52-32:57

Again, we're not perfect, but that is always our aim and our goal when we preach.

    32:59-33:06

So let me ask you, are you also committed to getting it right when you sit down to read and study the word of God?

    33:07-33:13

Do you put in the hard work to study so that you won't take passage of scripture out of context?

    33:13-33:16

Do you read slowly and prayerfully?

    33:17-33:24

Do you take the time to highlight verses, write questions in the margins, and use a solid study Bible when you're lost?

    33:25-33:30

Are you willing to humble yourself and ask others for help and guidance when you know what a certain passage means?

    33:31-33:36

Are you committed to only listening to reputable preachers who won't pull any punches?

    33:37-33:42

Listen, there are so many preachers out there under the name of Christian that preach sermons that are anything but.

    33:42-33:44

    You have to be discerning.

    33:44-33:48

You have to filter everything through the word of God.

    33:50-33:54

Do you seek to not just know the Bible, but live it out and apply it?

    33:55-34:03

The New Testament has nothing good to say about the man or woman who has a fat theological head, but does nothing with the knowledge that they possess.

    34:03-34:12

These things should affect everything about you, your thought life, what you say, how you treat other people, and how you react to tough situations.

    34:13-34:25

You know, growing up, my dad would teach me to ask yourself two questions Whenever you read the Bible, these two questions are, what does this teach me about God?

    34:26-34:28

And what does this teach me about myself?

    34:30-34:36

What does this teach me about who God is, who he's called me to be, and what he's calling me to do?

    34:38-34:40

    Head, heart, hands.

    34:42-34:47

Maybe you're sitting here this morning and you wanna become a better student of God's word, but you don't know where to start.

    34:48-34:49

and you're embarrassed to even ask for help.

    34:50-34:52

Listen, you aren't expected to know everything.

    34:52-34:54

That's something that only God can do.

    34:55-35:02

But you are expected to be faithful with what you do know and pursue after more knowledge and wisdom.

    35:03-35:07

If you need help or don't know where to start, please talk to Pastor Jeff or myself after service.

    35:07-35:12

We would love to come alongside you and equip you to become a student of God's word.

    35:12-35:24

I can think of very little in this life that I enjoy more than sitting down with a person one-on-one to unpack the word and teach them how to read the Bible for themselves.

    35:25-35:30

And there are so many other people besides Pastor Jeff and I who would love to do that with you in this church.

    35:31-35:40

If you're already a part of one, I would love to connect you with a small group this fall where you can study and unpack the word and community with other believers in Christ.

    35:41-35:45

Ladies, you can sign up to be one of our precept studies with First Samuel or Philippians.

    35:46-35:55

Guys, you can sign up to be a part of a fisherman group where guys meet up weekly to unpack the word, to keep each other accountable, and do life together.

    35:56-36:00

We have a Fundamentals of the Faith class that we're gonna continue to run throughout the next several years.

    36:01-36:03

Sign up for that whenever it is available.

    36:03-36:07

There are so many opportunities for diving deeper in discipleship at Harvest.

    36:08-36:13

Please grab ahold of these things and study the word with other believers.

    36:13-36:15

We can't do it without each other.

    36:16-36:24

We need each other if we're gonna become faithful readers, messengers, and appliers of God's word.

    36:26-36:30

So as we close, let's evaluate our question for this morning one final time.

    36:30-36:34

Did God really say that his word can be trusted?

    36:35-36:36

    What's the answer, church?

    36:36-36:37

    Yes.

    36:37-36:40

We can't say yes loud enough to that question.

    36:41-36:51

This book is a historically accurate account of what God has done in the past, which means that we can trust him in the present and we can trust him with our future.

    36:52-37:00

It is a sure and complete source of light and guidance, which means that we don't have to be lost in the darkness of this world.

    37:01-37:12

It is the authoritative and inspired word of God, which means that we don't have to fall prey to the opinions of our culture or the deceptive lies of our enemy.

    37:13-37:13

    Let's pray.

    37:18-37:21

Father, we thank you for your word.

    37:22-37:29

We thank you that you have revealed yourself to us in this book and through the person and work of your son.

    37:31-37:35

And Lord, we admit that we so often don't value it in the way that we should.

    37:36-37:40

We have a ton of copies laying around at home, but some days we don't even open it.

    37:41-37:45

And whenever we do read it, Lord, sometimes we just speed through it, then check it off our list and move on.

    37:45-37:47

Lord, may that never be so, Lord.

    37:47-37:53

May we view this time in your word as more important than eating or drinking, Lord.

    37:53-37:54

This is the time where we connect with you.

    37:55-37:56

    We hear from you.

    37:56-37:58

    We grow closer to you.

    38:00-38:12

And Lord, if there's someone in this room who doesn't know and love you, and they're unsure about this book, Lord, I pray that you'd open up their hearts to the truth and show them the beauty and the glory and the truthfulness of your word.

    38:13-38:17

They would submit to you both now and forever.

    38:18-38:19

    In Jesus' name, amen.

  2. What does it mean that the Bible defends itself? Why can it be trusted?

  3. Why do we delay/put off Bible reading and study at times? How can you take steps to grow in your ability as a student of the Bible over the next several days and weeks?

  • 00:49-00:53

"Stop, I'm not going to let you ruin another one." Let's break that down for a second.

    00:55-00:59

First of all, I'm not going to let you.

    00:59-01:09

As in, I'm going to exercise any pastoral authority that I have in this moment to forbid this atrocity that's happening.

    01:11-01:13

And then the fact that he used the word ruin.

    01:15-01:16

It kind of cracks me up.

    01:16-01:25

didn't say, "Stop, I'm not going to let you sing a hymn badly or stop, I don't think your heart's into it.

    01:25-01:37

You're actually ruining a hymn." And then to me, the icing on the cake of this, this sentence is another one.

    01:37-01:40

I'm not going to let you ruin another one.

    01:40-01:44

As in, this isn't the first time.

    01:45-01:47

This isn't the first hymn that you've butchered.

    01:48-01:50

And I just can't tolerate that.

    01:52-01:55

But he wasn't wrong, by the way.

    01:56-01:59

And I just have to ask, why do we do that?

    02:03-02:18

You know, the same people that go to the, you know, they go to the Steeler game, and they're up and they're dancing, and they're like, "Here we go, Steelers!" And they're like, "Go mean Joe Green!" or whoever plays for the Steelers now.

    02:19-02:35

And those same people that are just so, so passionate about this game, then they show up at church and they're like, "God, there's no one like you, God.

    02:36-02:41

"And there'll never be." Why do we do that?

    02:44-02:51

You know, the Bible says to love the Lord your God with your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

    02:52-02:54

And you know why we worship in music?

    02:54-02:56

This is one way that we worship.

    02:56-02:58

But do you know why we worship in music?

    02:58-03:03

Is this is the mechanism by which we are able to worship God with our emotions.

    03:04-03:06

    Because music is emotional.

    03:08-03:12

We love God with our emotions in worshiping in song.

    03:13-03:20

And if we're honest, many of us don't go after it the way that we should.

    03:22-03:23

    True or false?

    03:26-03:26

    You're like, well, why not?

    03:28-03:30

Maybe we don't see the reason.

    03:32-03:38

Well, that's about to change because we're going to worship soon.

    03:41-03:48

But first, we're gonna dive into God's word and you're going to see very plainly, you have reason to worship.

    03:50-03:56

And the Hebrew writer closes this section on faith with a powerful crescendo.

    03:59-04:01

We've seen that faith, faith is not easy.

    04:04-04:06

Faith calls us to make very hard decisions.

    04:07-04:11

Faith calls us to say no to our fleshly desires.

    04:14-04:18

We've seen that when you have faith, when you're a child of God, you're under his discipline.

    04:18-04:19

    That is not easy.

    04:21-04:33

And we saw last week that your race of faith affects more than just you because you're called to be a part of a community and other eyes are watching.

    04:39-04:51

And you see the life of faith can become so difficult that we start to lose sight of all the reasons that we have to worship.

    04:54-04:56

So let's be reminded from our text today.

    04:58-04:59

That's where the Hebrew writer's taking us.

    05:01-05:02

    You have reason to worship.

    05:04-05:07

And then we are going to blow the roof off this place.

    05:08-05:09

    All right?

    05:09-05:11

So I have reason to worship.

    05:14-05:15

    You're like, convince me, Hefei.

    05:15-05:16

    Number one, write this down.

    05:17-05:20

I live in grace, not law.

    05:20-05:21

    Why do I worship?

    05:22-05:26

Because I live in grace, not law.

    05:27-05:35

Now this passage is very difficult, but we're gonna break it down and threw it together, and you're going to see, this is glorious.

    05:37-05:44

Because what the Hebrew writer here is doing, very plainly you'll see, he's contrasting two mountains.

    05:45-05:49

    Mount Sinai and Mount Zion.

    05:50-05:58

He's contrasting the two to show us that we worship because we live in grace, not law.

    05:58-06:00

All right, look at verses 18 through 21.

    06:00-06:21

It says, "For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest, and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them.

    06:23-06:26

For they could not endure the order that was given.

    06:30-06:35

"If even a beast touches the mountain, "it shall be stoned.

    06:37-06:48

"Indeed, so terrifying was the sight "that Moses said, 'I tremble with fear.'" Like, what's he talking about?

    06:49-06:51

He's talking about Exodus chapter 19.

    06:52-06:58

And I want to encourage you to go back and read that, not right now, but I'm gonna paraphrase it for you.

    06:58-07:03

but I do encourage you sometime today, just go back and take a few moments and read it.

    07:03-07:04

    Here's the paraphrase.

    07:04-07:16

You know, Israel under the leadership of Moses left slavery, left Egypt, and on their travels, they camped at Mount Sinai where Moses went up to meet with God.

    07:17-07:27

And God said, "Tell Israel they must obey me." Then a thick cloud covered the mountain.

    07:28-07:49

And God said, "Do not touch the mountain, "and anything that touches the mountain shall be stoned." On the third day, the Bible tells us there was a cloud, and lightning, and thunder, and smoke, and trumpet blast.

    07:49-07:52

And the Bible says Israel trembled.

    07:52-07:54

    Could you imagine seeing this?

    07:54-07:55

    Israel trembled.

    07:55-08:03

And then the Bible says, "The whole mountain trembled." And God once again speaks.

    08:04-08:21

He says, "Don't allow anyone to come through "and try to see what is going on, or they will die." Israel was scared out of their minds.

    08:22-08:25

And they cried out, "Please, don't let God speak to us.

    08:26-08:35

"You speak to us on his behalf, "but do not let God speak to us, please, "or we will die." The scene was completely, it's terrifying.

    08:37-08:39

    It is a terrifying scene.

    08:39-08:40

    Like, why?

    08:42-08:42

    What's going on here?

    08:43-08:56

Well, God was saying that he is holy, perfect majesty, and sinful man cannot come and be in the presence of such majesty.

    08:59-09:00

    That's Exodus 19.

    09:02-09:05

And then you turn the page, do you know what's in Exodus 20?

    09:07-09:08

    The 10 Commandments.

    09:10-09:11

See, God was laying it down.

    09:15-09:27

The law showed us that God has this perfect standard that we are unable to keep.

    09:28-09:31

That was what the law did, right?

    09:33-09:38

And if you're sitting here thinking to yourself, you know what, I think I do pretty good.

    09:38-09:39

I'm gonna give you a quick test.

    09:39-09:44

We're gonna go through this very quickly, but I just want you somewhere on the side of your outline, give yourself a check.

    09:44-09:46

I'm gonna go through the commandments very quickly.

    09:46-09:49

Give yourself a check for every commandment you've broken, okay?

    09:53-09:54

I think some of you know where this is going.

    09:55-09:57

But in Exodus 20, God gave the 10 commandments.

    09:57-09:58

    Give yourself a check.

    09:58-10:00

The first commandment is there's only one God.

    10:01-10:02

    There's no other gods.

    10:02-10:08

So let me ask you, have you always loved God with your heart, soul, mind, and strength and made him the priority every moment of every day of your life?

    10:08-10:08

    Have you?

    10:09-10:10

If not, give yourself a check.

    10:10-10:13

The second commandment is you should not make for yourself any idols.

    10:13-10:16

You shouldn't have anything that you worship besides God.

    10:17-10:18

    Have you ever done that?

    10:18-10:20

Has there ever been anything in your life more important than God?

    10:21-10:22

Well, that's an idol, give yourself a check.

    10:22-10:26

The third commandment is do not use the Lord's name in vain.

    10:26-10:34

Have you ever spoken the name of God irreverently or spoken about God in a way that doesn't represent God?

    10:35-10:36

You're speaking his name in vain.

    10:37-10:38

    Give yourself a check.

    10:38-10:41

The fourth commandment, remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

    10:41-10:46

Now we saw in Hebrews chapter four, that Jesus Christ fulfilled the Sabbath.

    10:47-10:54

But there's a principle there, because we have this tendency to wanna work and go about our business all the time and make no room for God.

    10:54-10:59

He said, "You must take a day where you rest "and where you worship." How are you doing there?

    11:02-11:03

You're like, "Not great." Well, then give yourself a check.

    11:03-11:06

The fifth commandment is honor your parents, honor your father and mother.

    11:06-11:07

    Have you always done that?

    11:08-11:09

Have you always honored your parents?

    11:10-11:11

    No, give yourself a check.

    11:12-11:13

Sixth commandment is do not murder.

    11:13-11:13

    You're like, yes!

    11:15-11:15

    (congregation laughing)

    11:17-11:18

    I got one.

    11:19-11:19

    Hang on.

    11:20-11:24

Because Jesus said, if you've ever hated someone, you've committed murder in your heart.

    11:25-11:31

So according to the definition of murder by the son of God, if you ever hated someone, then you're guilty of murder.

    11:32-11:33

    Give yourself a check.

    11:34-11:35

    Where are we at, seven?

    11:36-11:38

Seventh commandment is do not commit adultery.

    11:40-11:46

Again, Jesus showed us in the Sermon on the Mount If you look at a woman with lustful intent, you've committed adultery in your heart.

    11:48-11:50

So if you're a man, give yourself a check for sure.

    11:54-11:55

The eighth commandment is do not steal.

    11:57-11:58

You ever taken something that didn't belong to you?

    11:59-11:59

    Give yourself a check.

    12:00-12:02

The ninth commandment is do not bear false witness.

    12:02-12:03

Have you ever told a lie?

    12:04-12:07

Even a little white lie, which is still a lie, have you ever told a lie?

    12:07-12:08

    Give yourself a check.

    12:08-12:09

And the 10th commandment is do not covet.

    12:11-12:13

Have you ever wanted something that belonged to somebody else?

    12:16-12:17

    Give yourself a check.

    12:18-12:20

    All right, anybody check free?

    12:22-12:23

    Do you see the problem?

    12:24-12:33

You wanna go to Mount Sinai, where the Holy Majesty of God is sitting, and you got all these checks, because you're, admittedly, you're a sinner.

    12:34-12:35

    Do you see the problem?

    12:37-12:43

God says, "This is my standard." and you just wanna walk up to Sinai?

    12:44-12:52

Ah, no, you don't wanna go to Sinai with all the sin on your record because you know what's not at Sinai?

    12:53-12:53

    Mercy.

    12:55-12:55

    There's no forgiveness.

    12:56-12:57

    There's no grace.

    12:57-12:58

    You know what's at Sinai?

    12:58-12:59

    Law, that's at Sinai.

    12:59-13:02

Law, justice, that's what you find at Sinai.

    13:04-13:13

And since you can't keep the law, you're doomed going there because all the law does is expose your sin and it brings judgment.

    13:16-13:26

Yet, most people and even a lot of people in church have this mindset that I hope I'm good enough to go to heaven.

    13:27-13:28

    I don't understand that.

    13:28-13:30

I hear people in the church say that.

    13:31-13:34

I just hope someday that I'm good enough to go to heaven.

    13:35-13:35

    You're not.

    13:36-13:37

    You're not even close.

    13:39-13:40

    Neither am I.

    13:43-13:45

None of us are good enough.

    13:46-13:54

If you come to God as this guilty sinner, you should be terrified.

    13:57-13:58

    Look at verse 22.

    14:00-14:28

He says, "But you have come to Mount Zion." and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn, who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect.

    14:29-14:30

    Do you see this?

    14:30-14:31

    Do you see the contrast?

    14:34-14:36

You didn't go to Sinai, Christians.

    14:36-14:39

He said, "You have come to a different mountain.

    14:39-14:44

"You have come to Zion." Like, well, what's Zion?

    14:46-14:49

Zion is the hill that Jerusalem was built on.

    14:50-14:51

    That's what Zion is.

    14:53-14:56

Zion is where Jesus Christ was crucified.

    14:58-15:03

And what the Hebrew writer is saying is this, don't miss this, because this is the whole point in this chunk.

    15:03-15:08

He says, "You believers have not come to God through keeping His law at Sinai.

    15:09-15:22

You have come to God by going through His gracious sacrifice at Zion." You're like, "Come where?" I think it's obvious in verse 22, right?

    15:22-15:25

He's talking about all the way to heaven.

    15:28-15:30

The city of the living God, heavenly Jerusalem.

    15:31-15:31

    Do you see that?

    15:33-15:43

You know the phrase I love here, you can underline this in your Bible, and if you won't, the person next to you, underline it in their Bible if they won't do it.

    15:44-15:45

    But I love this.

    15:46-15:49

Heaven is described as a festal gathering.

    15:52-15:55

Just gonna take a minute and unpack that for you.

    15:55-15:56

    What's a festal gathering?

    15:56-15:58

And what's another word for that?

    15:59-16:00

    It's a party.

    16:01-16:02

    It's a party.

    16:03-16:11

And I gotta throw that out because so many times over my ministry, I've heard people say, "Heaven sounds boring." I'm like, "You're boring.

    16:12-16:13

    "Heaven sounds boring?

    16:14-16:15

    "Are you kidding me?

    16:16-16:19

"The Bible says that God is going to throw a party.

    16:21-16:27

"What kind of a party do you think God throws?" It is going to be awesome.

    16:28-16:30

    I just had to...

    16:31-16:33

If you hear anybody say that, please bite them.

    16:34-16:35

    Just right in the arm.

    16:38-16:40

Not hard enough to draw blood, but hard enough to get their attention.

    16:41-16:43

And then tell them they're boring.

    16:43-16:44

But he says, I love this.

    16:45-16:51

He says, "Who are enrolled in heaven." Underline that too, since you're in the underlining business.

    16:52-16:53

    Enrolled in heaven.

    16:53-17:00

I shared with you before, one time I performed a wedding and Aaron and I showed up at the wedding reception and we were not on the guest list.

    17:01-17:03

    How humiliating was that?

    17:03-17:07

To walk in, got my best girl, she looks like a trillion dollars.

    17:08-17:14

Have a nice dinner together, little wedding celebration, and we are not on the guest list.

    17:14-17:15

    (imitates horn honking)

    17:16-17:18

    That was so humiliating.

    17:19-17:21

But here he says, "No, no, no, you are on God's guest list.

    17:22-17:23

    "You are enrolled in heaven.

    17:24-17:39

"He has a place for you at this party." Because, because, you're like, "Well, what about all these check marks, Pastor Jeff, huh?

    17:39-17:42

"What about all these check marks?" Look at the end of verse 23.

    17:43-17:47

"The spirit of the righteous made perfect." Underline that too.

    17:47-17:48

    Just underline the whole section.

    17:49-17:49

    Made perfect.

    17:51-17:56

So important, look, you have to be perfect to enter God's presence.

    17:56-17:58

    You have to be perfect.

    17:59-18:02

And by all the little check marks on your paper, you've just admitted that you're not.

    18:04-18:05

    So you have a problem.

    18:06-18:07

    Like I'm not perfect.

    18:07-18:11

But there's another way to obtain perfection.

    18:12-18:16

Besides your works, which is great because none of us are perfect.

    18:17-18:18

There's another way to obtain perfection.

    18:20-18:21

    You're like, well, what's that?

    18:21-18:23

    Well, look at verse 24.

    18:24-18:39

It says, "And to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." This is how you're made perfect.

    18:39-18:42

    It's through Jesus' new covenants.

    18:45-18:51

And it says, "The sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel." You're like, what's that all about?

    18:52-18:54

    Well, Cain and Abel, right?

    18:54-18:57

Genesis chapter four, Cain killed his brother Abel.

    18:57-19:05

And you remember God shows up to Cain and he says, Abel's blood is crying out to me from the ground.

    19:06-19:08

What was Abel's blood crying out?

    19:10-19:10

    Vengeance.

    19:13-19:15

And see, that's what the Hebrew writer here is saying.

    19:15-19:18

Jesus' blood doesn't cry out vengeance.

    19:18-19:21

Jesus' blood cries out a better word.

    19:21-19:22

Do you know what that word is?

    19:24-19:24

    Acceptance.

    19:26-19:26

    Acceptance.

    19:32-19:38

So church, we have reason to worship because we have come to Zion.

    19:39-19:54

Only at Zion do we find the grace and the mercy and the acceptance from God because of what Jesus did on our behalf.

    19:56-19:56

    You see that?

    19:57-20:06

Dying on the cross, on the cross, bearing the wrath of God for all of my check marks and all of your check marks.

    20:09-20:12

Bearing the wrath of God for the sins of anyone who will believe.

    20:12-20:15

God saved us from His own wrath.

    20:15-20:18

That's what happened at this mountain.

    20:19-20:19

    Zion.

    20:21-20:24

He did for us what we could never do for ourselves.

    20:25-20:28

So we don't live under the terror of the law.

    20:29-20:31

We live under the freedom of His grace.

    20:31-20:40

And to know this and to truly understand and embrace that only brings one real reaction.

    20:42-20:43

    And that's worship.

    20:45-20:46

    I have reason to worship.

    20:46-20:48

I live in grace, not law.

    20:48-20:51

Number two, here's a reason to worship.

    20:51-20:52

    Write this down.

    20:52-20:53

    I will never be destroyed.

    20:55-20:56

    Look at verse 25.

    20:59-21:02

It says, "See that you do not refuse him who is speaking.

    21:05-21:22

"For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth," that's Moses, that's Sinai, "much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven." That's Jesus, that's Zion.

    21:24-21:29

He's saying, "Jews, you know the story of Israel in the Old Testament?

    21:29-21:51

Did they escape the consequences of their disobedience?" You're like, "They sure did not." He goes, "Okay, so what makes you think "you're gonna escape if you disobey "the command to believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ?" This is a last call to Jesus.

    21:53-21:55

All right, we've seen it many times in Hebrews.

    21:57-21:59

He's taking one last hard run at it.

    22:02-22:07

in the most powerful way possible.

    22:10-22:12

    He gives one last warning.

    22:12-22:13

Look at verses 26 and 27.

    22:16-22:19

He says, "At that time," at what time?

    22:19-22:21

"At the time of Sinai," Exodus 19.

    22:21-22:26

At that time, his voice shook the earth, shaking Sinai.

    22:26-22:45

He goes, "But now he has promised." "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens." Okay, he's quoting Haggai 2.6 there.

    22:46-22:47

Like, well, what's he talking about?

    22:48-22:52

I'm so glad you asked because he, the very next verse he explains why he's quoting that.

    22:53-22:59

He goes, "This phrase, yet once more, indicates the removal of things that are shaken.

    23:00-23:04

That is things that have been made, creation, right?

    23:06-23:10

In order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

    23:13-23:15

Okay, so what he's saying is this.

    23:17-23:22

Back in Exodus 19, in Moses' day, Israelite's day, God shook Sinai.

    23:22-23:37

He says, "But listen, I wanna remind you "from the word of God." Haggai 2.6 is one of many verses in the Old Testament about this, but the day is coming that God is going to give the earth one final shake.

    23:42-23:44

A few years ago, we studied this in the book of Revelation.

    23:45-23:46

We get a lot of detail on this.

    23:47-23:50

In Revelation, we studied the seven-year tribulation.

    23:50-23:52

    The world was ravaged.

    23:52-23:58

God sent the seal judgments and the trumpet judgments and the bowl judgments.

    23:58-23:59

And then do you remember what happened after that?

    24:00-24:07

Jesus Christ returns in glory, and He establishes His thousand year kingdom on the earth.

    24:07-24:09

And then what happens after that?

    24:10-24:14

Revelation 20, Revelation 21, that's the last shake.

    24:15-24:22

He destroys everything in order to establish the new heavens and the new earth.

    24:26-24:27

That's what He's talking about here.

    24:28-24:31

The day's coming, look, sin has run its course.

    24:31-24:36

And he says, the day's coming, God's gonna shake everything in the universe.

    24:36-24:42

And the only thing that's gonna remain is that which cannot be shaken.

    24:45-24:46

    Like, what's that?

    24:47-24:50

Those are the eternal souls that have believed in Jesus Christ.

    24:51-24:54

If you're a follower of Christ, you cannot be shaken.

    24:55-24:59

You see that phrase all throughout the Old Testament, I will not be shaken, I will not be shaken.

    24:59-25:00

Have you ever wondered what that meant?

    25:02-25:04

You know, some people think it means like just tremble with fear.

    25:04-25:11

No, no, no, it means I will not be destroyed under the judgment of God.

    25:13-25:18

That's what it means when the Bible talks about God shaking the earth.

    25:20-25:24

I will endure, I will last, I will not be shaken.

    25:29-25:30

    Everything will be destroyed.

    25:33-25:36

If you are a follower of Christ, you will never be destroyed.

    25:36-25:37

The heavens and earth are going to burn.

    25:38-25:41

Those who have not come to Jesus will be destroyed forever in hell.

    25:43-25:48

But if you belong to Christ, you have nothing to fear.

    25:52-25:53

    That's reason to worship.

    25:56-25:56

    That's reason to worship.

    25:58-26:01

In about 15 minutes, God's gonna shut this whole thing down.

    26:04-26:07

But you will remain to enter into his joy forever.

    26:13-26:15

Why aren't we more fired up about this?

    26:22-26:28

I mean, I would say the vast majority of you believe this, and I believe it.

    26:29-26:31

So why aren't we more fired up about this?

    26:32-26:34

I thought about that a lot this week.

    26:40-26:42

Maybe it's because we don't see it.

    26:43-26:44

You think that might be it?

    26:51-26:55

Maybe because what we do see are babies being murdered.

    26:58-27:03

Maybe because what we do see are drag queens doing shows for children.

    27:07-27:09

Maybe because what we do see is flagrant corruption.

    27:15-27:16

    That's what we see.

    27:21-27:26

But you know, maybe that's where faith comes in.

    27:30-27:47

As we saw in chapter 11, if you were with us through that series, faith moved Abraham and Moses and that whole cast of characters to look ahead.

    27:50-28:05

Not to what was happening in the here and now, but we saw very clearly the faith of these incredible people from Old Testament times.

    28:08-28:15

They were commended because their faith was based not on what God was doing in the time alone, but based on what God would do.

    28:16-28:30

So I just have to ask us, church, you know, if you don't feel like worshiping right now, because things are hard right now, and I know for a lot of you, things are very difficult right now.

    28:31-28:41

And if you don't feel like worshiping right now because of your circumstances right now, Can you find reason to worship for what's coming soon?

    28:44-28:54

If you're not that excited about what God's doing now, can you worship God for what he's going to do?

    28:58-29:07

And finally, I have reason to worship because I've been given everything.

    29:09-29:10

    Look at verse 28.

    29:12-29:19

He says, "Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

    29:20-29:30

And thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe." There it is, there it is.

    29:30-29:38

He says, "Let us be grateful." You know, the bigger the gift, the bigger the thanks, right?

    29:39-29:41

The bigger the gift, the bigger the thanks.

    29:41-29:41

    So what do I mean?

    29:42-29:46

Like if I gave you a piece of gum, you would say, thanks.

    29:48-29:52

If you needed a ride to the airport and I gave you a ride to the airport, you'd be like, hey, thanks.

    29:54-30:06

If I said, I'll watch your kids for the weekend so you can have a romantic getaway with your spouse, You'd be like, "Oh, thank you!" You see, the bigger the gift, the bigger the thanks, right?

    30:07-30:08

    I mean, we get that.

    30:10-30:12

The bigger gifts naturally receive bigger gratitude.

    30:14-30:16

So the question is this, how big is God's gift?

    30:19-30:20

    He tells us right here.

    30:20-30:22

See the gift that God's given you?

    30:24-30:26

Let us be grateful for receiving what?

    30:27-30:29

    A kingdom that cannot.

    30:30-31:15

be shaken." God has given you the eternal glory of heaven. Everything that God has and everything that God is, He's just handed it to you because of what His Son has done on your behalf. So if you're a believer in Jesus Christ, I want to remind you, you've been given everything. Literally everything. So are you grateful?

    31:19-31:29

Are you grateful for that? Well, you're gonna have a chance in a moment to to express your love and your gratitude for God.

    31:31-31:37

I'd like to ask if our worship team would come forward and our elders would come up.

    31:39-31:54

There is no better way to celebrate what it means to come to Zion than to gather around the Lord's table for communion.

    31:56-31:57

    Look at verse 29.

    31:59-32:00

    I didn't forget it.

    32:02-32:05

This was very difficult because I could spend so much time just in this one verse.

    32:06-32:10

It says, "For our God is a consuming fire." Do you know what that means?

    32:12-32:13

    You see a fire?

    32:15-32:19

A fire will destroy what it cannot purify.

    32:23-32:29

but a fire will purify what it cannot destroy.

    32:31-32:50

And that's why he closes this glorious majestic section by reminding us that God is a fire and you will know him as your destroyer or in Christ, you will know him as your purifier.

Introduction:

Why I Can't Quit Running (Hebrews 12:12-17):

  1. Someone needs me to be an Example . (Heb 12:12-14)

1 Kings 18:21 - And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions?”

Philippians 2:14-15 - Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world...

  2. Someone needs me to Challenge their walk with Christ. (Heb 12:15-17)

Deuteronomy 29:18 - Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit...

  • 00:48-00:53

Father in heaven, we believe that you have revealed yourself through your Word.

    00:58-01:09

And I guess it's like that song that we sang when we were little kids, "I stand alone on the Word of God." Father, may that be true for us today.

    01:13-01:14

    That we stand on it.

    01:15-01:27

We don't just hear it, we don't just agree with it, but Father, let Your Word direct our lives, the way we live, the way we think, the way we speak.

    01:28-01:34

Father, let Your Spirit and Your Word do something supernatural in us today.

    01:35-01:38

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

    01:40-01:41

    Hebrews chapter 12.

    01:43-01:48

As some of you know, my son Cade plays deck hockey and Sean and I coach the team.

    01:49-01:55

And a couple of seasons ago, the game wasn't going our way, all right?

    01:55-01:56

    We were losing.

    01:57-02:04

And two of our best forwards, we noticed, were on the deck walking.

    02:06-02:11

They were just walking, putting forth absolute minimal effort.

    02:12-02:14

    I'm like, what's going on?

    02:15-02:15

    Did they get hurt?

    02:16-02:17

    Is there something I'm missing?

    02:17-02:23

A couple of times I thought maybe I missed a whistle and that's why they weren't running, but everybody else was running.

    02:23-02:27

And we got them off the deck and we were like, what's going on?

    02:29-02:35

And the one kid said, well, I have a big game coming up and I don't wanna be tired for it over a game that doesn't matter.

    02:37-02:44

So, I talked to Sean and good news, that young man got a lot of rest the rest of the game.

    02:46-02:49

Because he sat on the bench the rest of the game.

    02:49-02:50

    Rest up, champ.

    02:53-02:57

But I got to tell you, in the moment I was extremely frustrated.

    02:57-03:03

These were two of the higher skilled, more experienced players and the younger players were looking up to them.

    03:04-03:05

They're the players that they look up to.

    03:08-03:15

And in that moment, and they're good kids, but in that moment, they were only concerned about themselves.

    03:18-03:19

They weren't concerned about the team.

    03:22-03:23

    So they stopped running.

    03:26-03:31

And that's a real danger in the church that our passage is addressing today.

    03:34-03:43

Because church, you can get to the place where you care more about yourself than the team.

    03:46-03:47

    And you stop running.

    03:49-03:54

And when you stop running, you have a negative effect on the rest of the team.

    03:56-04:05

We've been talking about faith as we've been going through Hebrews 11 and 12, In chapter 12, he tells us to run.

    04:06-04:08

    And running is agonizing.

    04:08-04:10

We've spent a lot of time talking about that.

    04:11-04:13

    Why is running so agonizing?

    04:14-04:15

Why is the Christian life so hard?

    04:15-04:16

    Well, we saw that.

    04:17-04:21

The Christian life is hard because God is disciplining you.

    04:21-04:24

If you're his child, he disciplines you.

    04:24-04:28

He's constantly training you to be more like Christ.

    04:30-04:31

    That's why it's hard.

    04:35-04:38

All of your hardships are God's discipline.

    04:38-04:39

We talked about that last week.

    04:40-04:41

But you see, here's the danger.

    04:42-04:52

We can get in this mindset of this is my walk, and this is my race, and this is my faith, and these are my hardships.

    04:53-04:57

But the truth is, none of these things are just about you.

    05:03-05:05

    You're part of a community.

    05:07-05:15

And in this passage, what we're going to see here today are the serious responsibilities that come with being part of a community.

    05:18-05:20

    Don't misunderstand me.

    05:20-05:23

Yes, salvation is an individual transaction.

    05:23-05:24

    Yes, absolutely.

    05:25-05:34

Your walk with Christ has to be about your personal faith in Christ, you believing that he died for you, you believing that he raised from the dead.

    05:34-05:35

    That has to be you.

    05:35-05:39

But none of us are called into isolation.

    05:40-05:47

And there's a real factor that your faith is being part of a larger community.

    05:50-05:56

And right now, maybe some of you are overwhelmed And maybe some of you wanna quit running.

    05:57-06:03

That life circumstances have you beat down, you're out of gas and you're like, you know what, I just wanna quit.

    06:04-06:05

    I just wanna quit running.

    06:08-06:10

Well, I wanna tell you today that that's a terrible decision.

    06:13-06:17

Because your run affects more than just you.

    06:18-06:19

That's what this passage is about.

    06:20-06:24

So on your outline, just two points today.

    06:27-06:31

And you're going to discover them in the text with me, but why I can't quit running.

    06:33-06:34

    Why I can't quit running.

    06:35-06:37

Number one, write this one down.

    06:37-06:39

Someone needs me to be an example.

    06:39-06:41

    That's why I can't quit running.

    06:42-06:51

Though it's tempting, though it's hard, though it's agonizing, I can't just quit running because someone needs me to be an example.

    06:53-06:54

Look at verses 12 through 14.

    06:56-07:09

He says, "Therefore, lift your drooping hands "and strengthen your weak knees "and make straight paths for your feet "so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, "but rather be healed.

    07:10-07:23

"Strive for peace with everyone "and for the holiness without which no one "will see the Lord." Okay, so he's obviously continuing the race metaphor, right?

    07:23-07:31

So this drooping hands, weak knees, getting out of path, these are all signs of wearing out in a race.

    07:32-07:37

And like I made abundantly clear, I don't run, but I used to.

    07:40-07:46

And when you're running, the sign that you're wearing out is when you start to drop your hands.

    07:47-07:50

You can't get your hands up to get the elbows pumped.

    07:50-07:54

When you start to drop the hands, when your knees start to feel weak, you're wearing out.

    07:55-07:56

That's what he's talking about here.

    07:56-07:59

And you see, he's like a coach.

    08:01-08:03

He's telling the church, "Come on, you're getting tired, come on.

    08:03-08:05

Pick the arms up, get the legs moving, come on.

    08:05-08:10

Don't stop, don't stop." He's the coach on the sideline, cheering them on.

    08:10-08:11

    Why?

    08:11-08:12

    Why keep running?

    08:12-08:13

    It's hard, I'm worn out.

    08:14-08:14

    Why?

    08:14-08:16

He tells you why exactly here.

    08:16-08:29

He says, "Because it's not just about you." It's so that the people around you who don't know Jesus are going to be encouraged to believe.

    08:29-08:32

Like, where does it say that?

    08:32-08:33

I want you to look again, look very closely here.

    08:35-08:39

He says, "Lift your drooping hands, straighten your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet." Right?

    08:41-08:42

The physical signs of wearing out.

    08:42-08:43

But look at this next phrase.

    08:44-09:01

He says, "So," this is why, "He says, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed." You're like, what does that mean, what is lame?

    09:01-09:06

Well, understand the book of Hebrews was written to who?

    09:08-09:10

Not a trick question, yes, Hebrews.

    09:10-09:12

It was written to Jews, all right?

    09:13-09:25

And you know, in cultures, there's figures of speech that are used and references that are made that people are gonna understand that maybe people outside of that culture don't understand.

    09:25-09:27

And that's kind of what's happening here.

    09:28-09:32

Because this figure of speech that he's using, what is lame?

    09:33-09:36

The Jews would have known exactly what he was talking about.

    09:36-09:38

So we sort of have to catch up.

    09:39-09:42

This figure of speech takes us back to Elijah's day.

    09:43-09:44

    Remember Elijah?

    09:45-09:48

And in Elijah's day, people were waffling.

    09:49-09:51

Should I worship the Lord God, the living God?

    09:51-09:54

Should I worship him or should I worship Baal?

    09:55-09:56

And they were sort of on the fence.

    09:56-10:00

Look at what Elijah said in 1 Kings 18.21.

    10:01-10:13

And it says, "And Elijah came near to all the people "and said, 'How long will you go limping between two different opinions.

    10:15-10:16

    You see that literally.

    10:19-10:24

It's translated this way, Elijah was saying, how long are you going to be lame on both of your hands?

    10:25-10:27

    You're like, hams.

    10:29-10:31

He's talking about the back of your thighs.

    10:33-10:35

To paraphrase, he said, how long are you going to be lame?

    10:36-10:37

How long are you just going to sit around?

    10:40-10:41

    And not make a decision.

    10:41-10:42

    That's what he's saying.

    10:43-10:46

"Oh, some days we worship God, some days we worship Baal, I'm not really sure.

    10:46-10:52

What religion that I'm..." Elijah's like, "How much longer are you gonna do that and sit around and not make a decision?

    10:55-11:12

How long will you go lame on both your hams?" And what the Hebrew writer here is saying to these Jews, he's saying, "You have such lame people in your church." And he's saying, don't let them get out of joint.

    11:14-11:19

He says, instead, let them be healed, be healed, what do you think that means?

    11:20-11:21

    Pretty obvious, isn't it?

    11:22-11:23

    It's coming to Christ.

    11:25-11:27

Right, in other words, don't let them go to bail.

    11:28-11:35

You need to make sure they come to Christ, you need to make sure they come for healing, spiritual healing.

    11:39-11:41

So in other words, these verses, here's what he's saying.

    11:41-11:44

He goes, you get more not in your race, get moving.

    11:44-11:49

There are people on the fence about coming to faith in Jesus and they're watching you.

    11:49-11:50

    That's what he's saying.

    11:54-11:56

    And church, this is convicting.

    11:56-11:58

This is something the Lord's still teaching me.

    12:01-12:03

And I hope he's teaching you too.

    12:05-12:14

But listen, people who don't know Jesus, are never going to see him as victorious if you always act defeated.

    12:19-12:23

You're sending a mixed message with your words and with your actions.

    12:27-12:30

Church, we are terrible at this in general.

    12:32-12:34

    Sending the mixed message.

    12:36-12:41

You know, we're the kind of people that we come in here We're like, "God is sovereign, right?

    12:42-12:52

God rules over all." And then we turn around and we say, "My life stinks." Well, isn't God sovereign?

    12:54-13:00

If God's so sovereign, how can you turn around and say your life is so horrible?

    13:00-13:01

    Do you see the problem?

    13:02-13:12

You know, we come in here and we sing, "Jesus is victorious." And then as soon as church is over, we're like, I hate everything.

    13:16-13:17

    Really?

    13:20-13:24

You know, one of your best witnesses for Christ is, do you know what it is?

    13:26-13:28

This is straight from the word of God.

    13:29-13:31

It's not even something you do, it's something you stop doing.

    13:32-13:37

One of your best witnesses for Christ is not complaining.

    13:37-13:38

    Did you know that?

    13:39-13:40

I have to throw this in here.

    13:40-13:41

    Philippians 2.

    13:42-13:43

    Look at Philippians 2.

    13:43-13:51

It says, "Do all things without grumbling or disputing." AKA complaining.

    13:52-13:56

He goes, "Do all things without complaining." Why?

    13:57-14:01

Well, first of all, nobody likes a whiner, but here's what God says.

    14:01-14:06

He says that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish.

    14:06-14:07

Here it is, do you see this?

    14:07-14:15

In the midst of a crooked and twisted generation among whom you shine as lights in the world, you are supposed to shine.

    14:16-14:18

And you're not shining when you're complaining.

    14:22-14:23

    They need you.

    14:24-14:31

These people that are on the fence, and again, he's speaking specifically in the church, there are people sitting in this room right now that don't know Christ.

    14:32-14:36

And there are people that are watching this stream right now that don't know Christ.

    14:36-14:38

    And they're watching.

    14:39-14:39

    They're watching.

    14:39-14:44

They need you to show them the joy of the transformed life.

    14:45-14:48

They're asking, is God worth following?

    14:50-14:53

Is Jesus Christ really worthy of everything?

    14:56-15:01

People are evaluating the gospel message on the way that you run.

    15:03-15:04

    Does that matter to you?

    15:06-15:07

    (congregation laughing)

    15:09-15:12

Because evangelism, yes, it's sharing the word of God.

    15:12-15:15

    Evangelism is communicating the gospel.

    15:18-15:20

But that's more than just passing a note.

    15:24-15:25

Say, "Oh, you don't know Jesus?

    15:25-15:30

"Well, here, just read this." People need to see it.

    15:30-15:31

And that's what he's saying here.

    15:31-15:42

People are considering, these lame people on their hams are considering following Jesus because of you, or they are considering staying away from Jesus because of you.

    15:45-15:46

    That's convicted.

    15:49-15:56

Ask yourself this, what if you were the only Christian that somebody met?

    15:57-15:58

    Just think about that.

    15:58-16:00

    You were the only Christians.

    16:00-16:05

What would their takeaway be regarding Christianity?

    16:09-16:17

So he says, "Look, church, there's people on the fence, "and God says your example is going to determine "on what side they'll fall.

    16:18-16:20

    "So keep running, keep running.

    16:21-16:24

"People need you to be an example, all right?

    16:24-16:30

"Well, I can't quit running, number two, Because someone needs me to challenge their walk with Christ.

    16:32-16:36

Someone needs me to be an example, and someone needs me to challenge their walk with Christ.

    16:41-16:49

Pick up in verse 15, he says, "See to it." Underline that.

    16:51-16:53

Like, I don't really underline in my Bible.

    16:54-16:55

    Underline that.

    16:57-17:00

If your neighbor's not underlining it now, reach over and underline it in their Bible.

    17:02-17:02

    They'll thank you.

    17:03-17:07

Now, this is important, because it's a command.

    17:09-17:11

And the text hangs on this.

    17:12-17:25

Look at this, "See to it "that no one fails to obtain the grace of God." Let that sink in for a second.

    17:26-17:29

See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God.

    17:33-17:38

That no root of bitterness springs up and causes trouble.

    17:39-17:41

And by it, many become defiled.

    17:44-17:53

That no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal.

    17:55-18:19

"For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears." Okay, verse 15, "See to it." You know that's the same Greek word for elder, like in the church, pastor, shepherd, overseer, it's the same word.

    18:20-18:23

He goes, "You need to be an overseer in the church.

    18:23-18:28

You need to be on the lookout, watching over people in the church.

    18:28-18:29

    This is a command.

    18:30-18:32

You need to be seeing to something in the church.

    18:33-18:33

    It's a command.

    18:34-18:35

You're like, okay, see to what?

    18:36-18:41

He tells you, see that no one fails to obtain the grace of God.

    18:41-18:44

In other words, he's saying you need to be concerned about the soul of others.

    18:45-18:46

    Go after them.

    18:49-18:50

    Go after them.

    18:54-18:59

You know, especially in our culture, so much of church growth is about filling seats.

    19:01-19:04

And look, it's awesome to have goals, yay, party on.

    19:04-19:07

But I've talked to pastors that are like, here's my plan for the church.

    19:07-19:09

We wanna have 200 people in two months.

    19:10-19:12

And then by November, we wanna have 400 people.

    19:12-19:15

And it's all this numbers driven thing.

    19:18-19:21

but the great commission is not about filling seats.

    19:22-19:23

    What's the great commission about?

    19:24-19:25

    Making disciples.

    19:26-19:27

And that's what he's talking about here.

    19:28-19:34

He's saying you need to go after the people in your church who obviously are not following Jesus.

    19:34-19:35

    Go after them.

    19:37-19:39

Like, well, how do I know?

    19:41-19:43

You know, a tree buys fruit, right?

    19:44-19:47

And I'm not saying let's be the judgy church, but come on.

    19:47-20:03

When you talk to people and see, you know, how they're spending their time, the things they talk about, the type of language that they use, you know, their lack of understanding or interest in the word of God, that should be really obvious.

    20:06-20:07

    Where's your discernment?

    20:10-20:14

And look, we can't be afraid to lovingly confront.

    20:16-20:17

    See, there's the rub.

    20:18-20:23

Because as soon as you say, I know some people right now are thinking, oh, that's so judgy.

    20:23-20:26

It doesn't have to be judgy, all right?

    20:26-20:32

It doesn't have to be judgy to go to lunch with someone and say, hey, talk to me about your walk with Christ.

    20:34-20:35

    Is that judgy?

    20:37-20:45

Because we're commanded to see to it in the church that no one here is failing to obtain the grace of God.

    20:45-20:46

    He explains further.

    20:47-20:51

He says, "No root of bitterness." No root of bitterness.

    20:51-20:57

Again, this is another phrase for fence sitters, just like the previous passage, the limp.

    20:58-21:00

The root of bitterness means the same thing.

    21:01-21:04

Again, this was written to Jews who would have known their Old Testament.

    21:04-21:08

And when they heard root of bitterness, they would have known exactly what that meant.

    21:08-21:10

    Comes from Deuteronomy 29, 18.

    21:11-21:25

It says, "Beware lest there be," look at this, "Among you, a man or woman or clan or tribe "whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God "to go and serve the gods of those nations." Do you see that?

    21:25-21:28

Fence-sitters, God versus Baal, do you see that?

    21:30-21:39

He says, "Beware lest there be among you "a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruits." So this root of bitterness, again, it's the fence-sitters.

    21:39-21:49

In the Old Testament, he's saying, in Israel, you're gonna have people that are among you that don't really know the Lord and are gonna be tempted to go back to paganism.

    21:50-21:51

And it's the same principle in the church.

    21:51-22:00

There's people sitting here among us who don't really know the Lord and are gonna be tempted to go back to living a worldly lifestyle.

    22:04-22:06

And you have to address them.

    22:08-22:14

You can't let the worldly church goers go ignored because, do you see this?

    22:14-22:28

He says, if I get on the right page here, he says, "No root of bitterness springs up "and causes trouble and by it many become defiled." You see the problem.

    22:31-22:32

    It infects others.

    22:34-22:50

You see, you have someone in the church that doesn't know the Lord, worldly living, and we don't lovingly challenge them on their walk with Christ, that starts to infect other people, other people that are on the fence.

    22:50-22:52

    Oh, holiness doesn't really matter.

    22:52-22:54

    Seeking Jesus doesn't really matter.

    22:54-22:55

    Bible study doesn't really matter.

    22:56-23:02

And we start infecting other people, pulling more people to the wrong side of the fence.

    23:03-23:09

And soon, soon the church is full of worldly people.

    23:12-23:18

And all the church's energy and time and money and efforts and attention goes to worldly activities.

    23:19-23:30

I just, it's, I gotta tell you, it's heartbreaking as a pastor when I see churches doing things that have nothing to do with the Great Commission.

    23:32-23:35

because I know that the church didn't start out that way.

    23:37-23:53

The church didn't start out with, hey guys, let's get a group together and go after these worldly activities and we'll put up our rainbow flags and we'll go after social justice and we'll be woke.

    23:55-23:56

    Churches don't start that way.

    23:59-24:11

They start with this love for the Lord and love for the gospel and advancing the kingdom and great commission and a root of bitterness, unchecked, spreading, turning the church worldly.

    24:12-24:14

We're seeing the fruit of that, people.

    24:16-24:17

We're seeing the fruit of that.

    24:23-24:26

Not concerned about evangelism and discipleship.

    24:26-24:27

    Gotta be woke.

    24:30-24:32

catering to rainbow flags and social justice.

    24:32-24:34

And before you know it, guess what?

    24:34-24:35

    You don't have a church.

    24:36-24:41

You have a group of people that meet in a building that used to be called a church, but that's not a church.

    24:44-24:47

He's talking about going after people like Esau.

    24:49-24:51

    Quick review, Esau, Genesis 25.

    24:51-24:58

Remember, Father Abraham had Isaac and Isaac had twin boys, Jacob and Esau.

    24:59-25:06

And Esau was the first born, technically, but he was profane.

    25:08-25:12

That means Esau, we see in his life, had no interest in God.

    25:13-25:14

He just wasn't interested in God.

    25:15-25:17

Now, we've talked about Jacob before.

    25:17-25:18

I mean, Jacob was a deceiver.

    25:21-25:27

And there's not much you can read about Jacob that looked like great qualities to emulate.

    25:27-25:30

But Jacob had this going for him.

    25:31-25:33

He saw the value in God's promises.

    25:34-25:35

    He at least had that.

    25:38-25:46

Well, the story he's referencing here in Hebrews, some of you maybe are familiar with the story, but go back to what is it, Genesis 25.

    25:47-25:49

Jacob was cooking, Esau came in from hunting.

    25:49-25:52

I'm paraphrasing, you can look it up, get the full story.

    25:52-26:02

But Esau came in from hunting, And he's like, "I'm exhausted." And Jacob was cooking this red stew.

    26:04-26:05

    Doesn't that sound good?

    26:06-26:09

You're gonna go out after church, boys and girls, and get some red stew?

    26:12-26:19

Well, Esau comes in, he's like, "I'm starving." And Jacob's like, "All right, I'll trade you.

    26:20-26:42

"I'll give you a bowl of red stew for your birthright." And Esau was like, "Whatever, take it." What Esau did, you see, he sacrificed his future on the altar of the immediate.

    26:45-26:49

Esau lived his life only being concerned about the here and now.

    26:51-26:54

That's why Hebrews here talks about Him being sexually immoral.

    26:54-26:56

That's how a sexually immoral person lives.

    26:56-26:58

I only care about what feels good in the moment.

    26:59-27:04

Just here and now, not thinking about the future, what's going to make me happy right this minute.

    27:07-27:20

That's why Genesis 25, 34 says, "Thus Esau despised his birthright." The point, there's people in the church like Esau.

    27:21-27:25

They're like, you know what, when it all boils down to it, the things of God don't really mean anything to me.

    27:27-27:28

    Not really that interested.

    27:31-27:36

Now, verse 17 here, I've heard a lot of sermons and teachings on this.

    27:37-28:01

It says, "Afterward, when he desired "to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, "For he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears." And a lot of people teach this passage as if Esau wanted to repent in his heart, but he was forbidden in his heart to repent.

    28:02-28:05

His heart was just completely unable to repent.

    28:06-28:08

And that's not really what this is saying.

    28:09-28:17

If you go back and read the actual account, Genesis 27 now, long story short, Esau was seeking his father's repentance.

    28:18-28:28

Esau went back to Isaac and was like, "Please, please change your mind." And Isaac said, "It's too late." That's what this is talking about.

    28:28-28:31

He was seeking repentance, but he couldn't get it.

    28:31-28:32

    It was too late.

    28:36-28:37

    That's why Esau wept.

    28:40-28:45

His dad wouldn't change his mind, it was too late.

    28:47-29:06

And church, we get Esau's in here, just concerned about the here and now, no real interest in God, no real interest in his promises, and the day will come for them, like Esau, that they will forfeit God's promise, and it's going to be too late for them.

    29:08-29:11

And like Esau, it's not going to end well for them.

    29:17-29:20

And that's on us because we never went after them.

    29:22-29:26

We never challenged them to truly come to Christ.

    29:27-29:31

We never truly sat down with them and let's have a heart to heart.

    29:32-29:33

Where are you at with the Lord?

    29:33-29:34

Do you understand what God's word says?

    29:35-29:39

    We don't care.

    29:42-29:43

And that's what he's saying here.

    29:44-29:45

    Go after them.

    29:46-29:49

Because the Esau's in your church, it's not gonna go well for them either.

    29:53-29:57

And you're like, man, pastor, I'm sorry, man, that just doesn't sound loving.

    29:58-30:01

That just doesn't sound loving to challenge somebody like that.

    30:05-30:06

    Imagine this scenario.

    30:08-30:14

Imagine you're at home and you go out on your porch, your deck, your patio, whatever you got in front of your house.

    30:15-30:19

And you look across your neighbor's house and his house is on fire.

    30:21-30:25

And you can see in his picture window that he's on his recliner sleeping.

    30:28-30:31

So let me ask you, What's the most loving thing you can do in that scenario?

    30:34-30:36

Would you just shrug your shoulders and say, "You know what?

    30:37-30:39

    "I don't wanna seem judgy.

    30:41-30:55

"I don't wanna force my beliefs on him "about fire and structural damage "and what could happen to him "if the house falls on top of him ablaze.

    30:55-31:00

"I don't want him to think that I'm some kind of like fire marshal, holy roller Alex.

    31:00-31:01

I don't want him to think that about me.

    31:03-31:05

So I'm just live and let live.

    31:05-31:06

    That's what, you know what?

    31:07-31:10

That's just always in my heart of hearts of hearts.

    31:10-31:11

    That's what I've always believed.

    31:11-31:12

    Just live it.

    31:12-31:14

Is that the most loving thing you can do?

    31:15-31:27

I'll tell you what the most loving thing you could do in that scenario is, is to stomp their door in and go in there and grab them by the scruff of the neck and the seat of the pants and throw them out of that house.

    31:27-31:29

That's the most loving thing that you can do.

    31:32-31:38

And church, that's why he's telling us here, we have a responsibility to each other.

    31:39-31:45

See to it, he says, that no one fails to obtain the grace of God.

    31:46-31:54

You have that responsibility to say, look, if someone here is going to hell, they're going to have to walk over me, all right?

    31:56-31:57

    We have that responsibility, church.

    31:58-32:00

    So are you getting tired?

    32:00-32:02

    Are you feeling overwhelmed?

    32:02-32:05

Are your arms starting to drop on your run?

    32:05-32:07

Well, he's saying, look, quitting's not an option.

    32:10-32:26

And I just wanna challenge you, church, if right now you can't feel motivated to keep running for yourself, Can you be motivated to run for the sake of someone else?

    32:29-32:39

Because you're an example and the people that are on the fence are never gonna get shaken from their stupor if you don't challenge them.

    32:40-32:41

    Let's pray.

    32:42-32:56

Father in heaven, We live in such a isolated and insulated mindset right now in our culture.

    33:06-33:08

    But you don't change.

    33:11-33:28

You have called us to be a part of a community, a community that challenges one another, a community that cheers one another on, it's a community that encourages one another to pursue Christ, to love you with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

    33:30-33:36

And Father, so often in the church, we have people among us that are like Esau and we just don't care.

    33:37-33:44

But I pray, Father, you would give us the love and the grace to go after such people.

    33:47-34:00

to be obedient to your word, that even though we're tired, even though we don't feel like running, that's not just about us.

    34:02-34:07

You've made it clear in your word here that our run affects other people.

    34:09-34:31

So Father, I pray by the wisdom of your word, by the power of your spirit, that you would strengthen us, that we would pick up our arms, that our legs would get strong, that we get back on our path, and we would run in a way that glorifies the name of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Hebrews 12:12-17

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What kind of example are you displaying on what it looks like to follow Jesus? Specifically, how much are you a complainer? What does complaining have to do with our witness? Read Philippians 2:14-15.

  3. You know someone in the church that is a “church-goer”, but there seems to be no fruit in their lives that they are born again. How exactly do you lovingly challenge them on this, fulfilling Hebrews 12:15?

Breakout
Pray for one another to be going after those in the church who haven’t come to Christ.

  • 00:48-01:12

You know, it was so long ago, I don't even remember her name, but a friend had asked me to visit a friend in the hospitals, a very young girl who was in the psychiatric unit because of a suicide attempt.

    01:14-01:20

And I went and I met with this girl, I think she was still in her teens at the time.

    01:22-01:26

And she had taken her father's car and wrecked it on purpose.

    01:30-01:38

And making a long story short, but in a delicate way, I asked her what made her do that.

    01:38-01:42

And she said something, I'll never forget it.

    01:42-01:44

I'll never forget what she said.

    01:45-01:53

She said, "My parents never disciplined me, ever." I've never heard a teenager say that.

    01:55-01:56

    I've heard the opposite.

    01:58-02:20

She said, "My parents have never disciplined me." And she said, "I thought that if I did this, I would get dad's attention." And I said, "Your parents never discipline you?" She said, "No." She said, "I've come home drunk at three in the morning." She said, "You know what my parents would do?

    02:21-02:28

They'd tuck me in and say, 'We'll talk about it tomorrow.' And then they'd wake me up for school in a few hours and send me off." And it was never brought up.

    02:34-02:53

And I'm standing in the hospital looking at what happens when you have a father who does not lovingly discipline his child, even when a child recognizes she so desperately needs it.

    02:54-02:56

And I got good news for you.

    02:58-03:00

Your heavenly father is a lot different.

    03:02-03:04

We're gonna talk about that today, but first let's pray.

    03:06-03:11

I'm gonna ask you, would you please pray for me that I would be faithful to communicate clearly the word of God.

    03:12-03:17

And I will pray for all of us to have hearts open to receive it.

    03:18-03:22

So that as Dan prayed, the word of God can change us today.

    03:23-03:23

    Let's pray.

    03:32-03:35

And all of God's people said, amen.

    03:35-03:38

We've been talking about faith for the past few weeks.

    03:39-03:45

And chapter 11 showed us that faith is building your life on God's word.

    03:46-03:50

It's waiting for God's promises to be fulfilled.

    03:54-03:58

That's why when we got to chapter 12, he says we need to run the race.

    03:59-04:04

Faith is striving through suffering to get to the finish line.

    04:04-04:06

It's a call for endurance, right?

    04:06-04:08

    It's literally agony.

    04:11-04:14

    Faith is often agonizing.

    04:14-04:23

And we said last week, still true, but if you find your faith, your walk with Christ, if you're like, you know what?

    04:23-04:27

I find it to be easy and convenient.

    04:28-04:30

And my faith always makes me feel good.

    04:31-04:33

I gotta tell you, you don't have biblical faith.

    04:33-04:40

You don't have the kind of faith that's represented in God's word if it's always candy land.

    04:42-04:53

So, I think a lot of us would testify that, yeah, the life of faith is hard, right?

    04:57-05:01

Today we're gonna answer the question why.

    05:03-05:06

    Why is it so hard?

    05:12-05:17

I mean, if I was God, you ever play that game?

    05:18-05:23

I'd change a lot of things around here and I'd screw them all up if I was God.

    05:23-05:26

But if I was God, I wouldn't make it so hard for people.

    05:26-05:28

    (congregation laughing)

    05:31-05:32

    But he does.

    05:34-05:35

    Why is it so hard?

    05:37-05:45

You know, I was thinking the last couple of weeks, especially as we've been going through the people that have inspired us to faith from the Bible, Hebrews 11.

    05:45-05:56

And last week I shared some men on this earth, some who have gone to heaven since, who have inspired me.

    05:59-06:01

You know, I realized something this past week.

    06:03-06:07

The best Christians that I've known are the ones that have had the hardest lives.

    06:07-06:08

Think about that for a second.

    06:09-06:11

Think of the best Christian that you know.

    06:16-06:19

The best Christians I know are the ones that have had the hardest lives.

    06:20-06:29

The best ones that I've known have had the hardest lives.

    06:34-06:36

Is it possible there's a connection there?

    06:40-06:43

You're like, man, Pastor Jeff, that is a tough pill to swallow.

    06:44-06:46

Well, while we're swallowing tough pills, here's another one.

    06:47-06:55

All of the hardship that you face as a follower of Jesus is actually God's discipline in your life.

    06:59-07:04

You're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, hang on a second, hang on a second, just, you know, let's pump the brakes here.

    07:04-07:07

This isn't the feel good Father's Day message I was looking for.

    07:07-07:16

But you're telling me that all of the hard stuff that I deal with in my life is from God.

    07:18-07:20

You're like, "No, no, no, no, no." You're like, "No, Pastor Jeff, you're wrong.

    07:21-07:35

It's from Satan." And I would say, "Well, what would Job say about that?" Yeah, Satan afflicted Job, but he had to get God's permission first, right?

    07:36-07:42

And God used everything that Satan was doing for God's purposes.

    07:43-07:50

You could ask Paul, 2 Corinthians 12, a messenger from Satan, that thorn in the flesh.

    07:51-07:56

God used that to accomplish something in Paul's life.

    07:56-08:01

God uses Satan for God's glorious purpose.

    08:02-08:05

And there's, well, there was somebody else.

    08:06-08:09

    Oh, oh yeah, Jesus.

    08:11-08:18

Did God use Satan to accomplish glorious eternal purposes through Jesus Christ?

    08:19-08:19

    Yes or no?

    08:20-08:20

    Yes.

    08:24-08:29

It was God at work and He uses Satan.

    08:30-08:32

And here's a reality you're going to learn.

    08:33-08:39

Satan wants to tear you down and God wants to build you up and they are both using the same thing.

    08:41-08:50

So, when you're going through hardship, whatever the source looks like, ultimately it's from God.

    08:53-09:05

And He's not just allowing it, as if you're facing hardship and God's up in heaven going, "Okay, I'll permit it." He's not just allowing it, He's using it.

    09:07-09:17

God says, "Yes, this is what we are going to do in his life." You're like, "Why is he using it?" He's using it to discipline you.

    09:18-09:20

Today we're going to talk about discipline.

    09:21-09:27

Because as we look at this passage, I counted nine times the word discipline shows up in this passage.

    09:27-09:31

And I love when that happens because I don't have to figure out what the passage is about.

    09:32-09:32

    Nine times.

    09:33-09:34

    It's about discipline.

    09:34-09:39

Now, as soon as I say discipline, we think so narrowly about that, right?

    09:39-09:43

Like if I said, you know, discipline your children, what's the first thing you think of?

    09:43-09:45

Or maybe the only thing you think of?

    09:45-09:46

    Spanking, right?

    09:46-09:49

Yeah, discipline, kids need a good spanking nowadays.

    09:49-09:55

And we are so narrow because discipline is so much more than that.

    09:57-10:09

Here's a definition to help us expand our thoughts on the concept because again, you think discipline is just like the SmackDown and it's not.

    10:11-10:19

Discipline is God's often painful means of making you gain wisdom and learn to avoid foolishness.

    10:22-10:24

What's on the screen right there?

    10:24-10:30

God's often painful means of making you gain wisdom and learn to avoid foolishness.

    10:30-10:32

That's kind of a generic definition.

    10:33-10:34

So we're gonna flesh that out a bit.

    10:35-10:36

The discipline is about building character.

    10:37-10:38

    That's what discipline is about.

    10:39-10:43

Discipline is not, it is not, it is not punishment.

    10:45-10:50

There's a huge difference between discipline and punishment and the difference is the outcome.

    10:50-10:54

And I'm gonna say this real quick because I hear so many Christians say that.

    10:54-10:55

    I think God's punishing me.

    10:55-10:58

God is not punishing you, okay?

    10:59-11:02

There is a huge difference between punishment and discipline.

    11:02-11:04

Punishment has the outcome of vengeance.

    11:05-11:09

It's you did wrong, and I'm going to inflict vengeance on you for the sake of pain.

    11:11-11:12

    That's punishment.

    11:14-11:26

So if you're a believer in Christ, understand God is not punishing you because when Jesus Christ was on the cross, he was bearing all of God's punishment on himself on your behalf.

    11:27-11:28

    Okay?

    11:28-11:40

So many Christians act like, you know, God poured out his wrath on Jesus and then we sin, and God's like, "No, I can't believe you, "now I'm gonna have to punish you too." No, no, no, he's satisfied.

    11:40-11:42

    That's perpetuation.

    11:43-11:46

God is satisfied with what Christ has done on our behalf.

    11:46-11:47

    God is not punishing you.

    11:49-11:51

Discipline has a different outcome and it's character.

    11:51-11:56

The character, it's changing your course in order to build you up.

    11:57-12:03

So the hard stuff in your life is God disciplining you, not punishing you.

    12:03-12:04

    Do you understand that?

    12:05-12:13

Because from now on, if anybody associated with this church says, "I just think God's punishing me." If you hear that, you have the permission to bite them.

    12:14-12:15

    (congregation laughing)

    12:16-12:20

Because if you're following Christ, that is a blasphemous concept.

    12:25-12:28

Jesus took your punishment, but God will discipline you.

    12:30-12:33

Three reasons for discipline, and we're gonna get to the text.

    12:33-12:36

We gotta on-ramp this though, because people are so messed up about this.

    12:37-12:38

    Three reasons for discipline.

    12:38-12:39

    We're gonna write these down.

    12:40-12:43

Now, when you think of discipline, think in terms of parents, right?

    12:43-12:45

    Parents and children, Father's Day.

    12:45-12:52

Yes, but also God disciplining His children.

    12:52-12:55

    Both contexts, same purposes, right?

    12:55-12:58

There's three purposes for discipline and the first is correction.

    12:59-13:01

    Okay, first is correction.

    13:01-13:06

Parents, your kid sins, does something rebellious, you discipline them.

    13:07-13:07

    Why?

    13:07-13:09

You're saying this isn't how we do, okay?

    13:09-13:11

We don't do it that way.

    13:11-13:12

You're not doing it that way.

    13:12-13:14

    So now you're facing discipline.

    13:14-13:20

You're bringing some sort of painful consequence because we don't do it that way, right?

    13:20-13:23

You know, God will discipline his children for the same thing.

    13:24-13:26

To teach us, no, no, no, no, no.

    13:26-13:27

We don't do it that way.

    13:28-13:29

    Correction.

    13:30-13:31

    Another one is prevention.

    13:32-13:33

    Three reasons for discipline.

    13:33-13:34

    Another reason is prevention.

    13:36-13:45

Okay, so parents, maybe you say, now I'm talking to parents of teens, hopefully parents of toddlers aren't saying this, but maybe you say to your teenager, you have to be home by 11.

    13:49-13:50

    That's not to punish you.

    13:52-13:54

    That's to protect you, right?

    13:56-13:59

And sometimes God's discipline is like that, right?

    13:59-14:01

We talked about 2 Corinthians 12.

    14:02-14:06

You know, Paul had that thorn in the flesh messenger from Satan that God used.

    14:06-14:09

God didn't allow that to happen.

    14:09-14:12

God didn't use that because Paul was proud.

    14:14-14:19

If you study the passage, He used that to keep him from becoming proud.

    14:19-14:22

Sometimes discipline is sort of that preemptive thing.

    14:22-14:28

Like I'm gonna hem you in here a little bit because I love you and I wanna protect you, right?

    14:28-14:32

And then the third one, the third reason for discipline is edification.

    14:34-14:40

That's taking or allowing your child to go through a hard experience so that they can be equipped.

    14:45-14:51

And I gotta tell you, my son Cade started working at Chick-fil-A a few months ago.

    14:52-14:53

    That was hard for me.

    14:54-14:56

And some of you parents get it.

    14:56-15:00

First time kid gets job out of the house on their own-ish kind of thing.

    15:00-15:01

You know what I'm talking about, parents?

    15:01-15:02

Don't leave me up here, come on.

    15:03-15:04

None of you dealt with that?

    15:05-15:06

Okay, thank you, thank you, Candice.

    15:09-15:10

    Isn't it hard?

    15:11-15:17

And I remember Candace like, when his first day, she's the only one that is tracking here.

    15:17-15:23

So his first day at work, I wanted to go in with them.

    15:24-15:31

And wherever they stationed him, I just wanted to stand there and be like, nobody's mistreating him.

    15:32-15:33

    Nobody's speaking rudely to him.

    15:35-15:36

    You're gonna deal with me?

    15:38-15:44

I wanted to do that so badly and I knew that I couldn't because this is part of growing up, right?

    15:44-15:52

Part of growing up is like, buddy, I'm allowing you to go through this because it's going to be good for you.

    15:52-15:54

And you see your heavenly father does that for you.

    15:55-16:00

Sometimes you go through something that you're like, oh, this is kind of scary, this isn't familiar.

    16:00-16:05

And God's like, I'm letting you go through with this because I wanna teach you something.

    16:08-16:15

2 Corinthians 1 tells us that we are comforted in affliction in order to comfort those in affliction.

    16:15-16:17

That's a very common way that God does it, right?

    16:18-16:19

    He teaches us sympathy.

    16:19-16:24

You're gonna go through this because you're gonna be able to minister to the next guy going through it.

    16:26-16:33

So we discipline our children for these reasons because God disciplines his children for the same reasons.

    16:37-16:42

So if I say, "Children need discipline." Yes or no?

    16:42-16:43

    Yes.

    16:43-16:44

    Children need discipline.

    16:44-16:45

    Yes or no?

    16:45-16:45

    Come on.

    16:46-16:48

And we're like, "Yes, yes, I'm on board with that.

    16:48-16:53

Children need discipline." Okay, next question or next statement rather.

    16:53-16:54

Let's see how much you agree with this one.

    16:54-16:56

"I need discipline." Can you say that about yourself?

    16:57-17:00

Say it, say, "I need discipline." - I need discipline.

    17:01-17:07

Some of you didn't say that very strongly And I get it because that's a lot harder sell, isn't it?

    17:08-17:14

Of course we recognize that our goofy rebellious child needs discipline, but do you recognize that you need it?

    17:16-17:17

Do you recognize that you need it?

    17:18-17:21

Everyone would say discipline is good for kids, right?

    17:21-17:23

Have you ever been around an undisciplined kid?

    17:23-17:24

    (gagging)

    17:25-17:25

    Gross.

    17:32-17:35

Discipline is good for your kids, but who would say, who would say this?

    17:35-17:36

Being disciplined is good for me.

    17:38-17:39

Being disciplined is good for me.

    17:41-17:42

    It's a hard sell.

    17:43-17:45

That's why we're gonna see what God says about it.

    17:47-17:49

And what was the longest introduction ever?

    17:50-17:53

On your outline, discipline is good for me.

    17:56-17:57

    Why?

    17:57-17:58

    Well, three reasons.

    17:58-18:01

One, because it is from God.

    18:02-18:11

I don't have to wonder if discipline is good, because the Bible is very clear that it is, because it is from God.

    18:12-18:13

    Look at verse four.

    18:17-18:26

It says, "In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood." Stop there.

    18:27-18:32

He's like, "Yes, you're struggling." He's talking to these Hebrew Christians in this church.

    18:32-18:37

He goes, "Yes, you're struggling, but same message for you." Okay, you're going through some struggles right now.

    18:37-18:40

Some of you are, but don't overreact, okay?

    18:41-18:42

    Nobody likes a whiner.

    18:44-18:49

And the reality is we are so spoiled with first world problems.

    18:51-18:55

And the things that we whine about and we think are persecution is pathetic.

    18:55-18:56

Let me tell you a quick story.

    18:56-18:58

You know, we've been over to Thailand a few times.

    18:58-19:04

One time when I was over in Thailand, there was this Christian family in this very pagan village that had twins.

    19:05-19:12

Well, in that culture, in that pagan culture, the pagan belief is the twins are a birth defect.

    19:12-19:15

So those twins had to be executed immediately upon birth.

    19:16-19:26

Well, the family that had the twins, they just became Christians and they're like, "I'm not killing children because killing children is evil." Right?

    19:28-19:34

So like the town witch doctor made this like, this little like stick design pattern thing.

    19:34-19:40

It was like this little, I don't even know how to describe it is made out of sticks, like a lawn ornament kind of thing.

    19:40-19:42

And he stuck it in their lawn.

    19:43-19:51

And Barnabas said, that's his way of marking this family for death to say, we are killing those kids.

    19:51-20:00

And that family had to flee the village because of their following Christ and their refusal to murder babies, they had to flee the village.

    20:01-20:02

These are people that we know.

    20:06-20:08

    So how's your struggle been?

    20:09-20:16

You're like, but you don't understand Pastor Jeff, the lady at Starbucks said happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

    20:19-20:19

    Like, oh.

    20:25-20:26

And I think that's what he's saying here.

    20:27-20:30

He's like, you ain't dead yet.

    20:32-20:33

    Right?

    20:33-20:37

Some people even today right now are dying because they believe in Jesus.

    20:38-20:39

    You aren't there yet, okay?

    20:39-20:43

So let's not lean on the panic button.

    20:43-20:43

    Look at verse five.

    20:44-20:53

He says, "And have you forgotten the exhortation "that addresses you as sons?" He's like, you should be expecting this, by the way.

    20:53-20:56

He's gonna take us here in a second to the Old Testament.

    20:56-20:57

    That's what he's saying.

    20:57-20:59

He's like, do you even Bible?

    20:59-21:04

Like if you know God's word, you should be expecting hard things to come.

    21:06-21:06

    Right?

    21:08-21:10

Look at verse five, second part.

    21:10-21:14

He says, now he's quoting here Proverbs 3.11.

    21:14-21:35

He says, "My son, do not regard lightly "the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by Him." He's saying in Proverbs, and he's quoting Proverbs, same truth in Proverbs, in Hebrews, same truth today, harvest Bible chapel.

    21:36-21:42

Life is difficult for God's people because God disciplines His kids.

    21:43-21:49

In other words, he's saying, hey, when you're going through hard stuff, this is from God.

    21:52-22:01

So he comes out of the gate here with the warning from Proverbs, "When we're being disciplined, there are two wrong ways to handle it." Do you see that?

    22:02-22:06

And as people, we say this so many times, we have this tendency to go to the extremes.

    22:06-22:09

And he says, "Both of the extremes are wrong." Look at it again.

    22:09-22:10

    Look at verse five.

    22:10-22:15

He says, "First, do not regard lightly." Do not regard lightly.

    22:16-22:24

So the first way that you can mishandle God's discipline is to disregard it, write that down, disregard.

    22:25-22:29

We lose sight of the fact that this is from God, so we regard it lightly.

    22:31-22:34

Or we just, we're so focused on the pain that we're missing the lesson.

    22:35-22:38

And I was thinking about, how do you illustrate this, right?

    22:38-22:43

Regarding the discipline lightly, and I realized that we have a lot of examples of this, right?

    22:44-22:45

Have you ever disciplined a teenager?

    22:46-22:49

I got two teenagers and I can tell you what that's like.

    22:50-22:51

Some of you know what that's like.

    22:52-22:57

When a teenager gets disciplined and they don't think it's fair, and they don't think it's right.

    22:57-23:01

Oh man, my dad stinks and it's not fair.

    23:02-23:03

    And that's regarding lightly.

    23:04-23:17

Trying to teach you something and you're just blowing it off because you're so ticked off about the inconvenience or the pain or whatever, don't blow it off.

    23:17-23:18

    Don't blow it off.

    23:19-23:20

But the second one, did you see it?

    23:21-23:24

    It's despondency.

    23:26-23:27

    You see that?

    23:27-23:31

He says, "Nor be weary." Nor be weary.

    23:33-23:38

That's when you get to the point that you're under hardship that God is using to discipline you.

    23:39-23:41

And you just get to the point that you say, "You know what? I give up.

    23:42-23:44

    I can't take it anymore.

    23:47-23:50

You're like, I don't know why God would allow this in my life.

    23:51-23:53

And he's reminding us, we know why God allows it.

    23:53-23:54

    It's discipline.

    23:56-24:00

And instead we need to learn, I need to learn this more than anybody in this room.

    24:02-24:13

Instead of being overcome by the hurt or the grief, I need to change the question.

    24:14-24:16

Instead of saying, why would God allow this?

    24:18-24:23

I/we need to ask, what does God want me to learn through this?

    24:25-24:26

What does God want me to learn?

    24:27-24:29

He's trying to teach me something.

    24:31-24:33

What does he want me to learn?

    24:33-24:34

    This is from God.

    24:35-24:35

    This is from God.

    24:35-24:47

1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks in all circumstances." And this is, I was gonna cut this whole chunk out, but I can't because it's so important.

    24:48-24:53

He noticed he says you give thanks in circumstances, not for circumstances, right?

    24:55-24:58

Sometimes you can't be thankful for a circumstance.

    24:58-24:59

    You know what I mean?

    24:59-25:07

Like somebody gets a bad diagnosis, and you're like, "I'm so thankful for Joey's cancer." Like, no, no, no, no.

    25:08-25:09

    Or a job loss.

    25:10-25:15

You know, I'm so thankful that I don't have to worry about how to spend all that money that I was making.

    25:16-25:17

    Like, nobody says that.

    25:17-25:20

But you can be thankful in the circumstance.

    25:21-25:26

Like, okay, Joey was diagnosed with cancer, and I'm going to thank God for what he's going to do.

    25:26-25:37

God's going to show up somehow and glorify his name and give opportunity for his gospel, and maybe God will bring healing, and I'm gonna thank God ahead of time for everything that I know He's going to do.

    25:37-25:40

See, that's giving thanks in the circumstance, not for it.

    25:40-25:41

    Do you get that?

    25:41-25:42

    Or the job loss thing.

    25:43-25:50

You could say, I'm thankful that I had the opportunity that I had, and I'm thankful that God is going to take me to another chapter of life.

    25:50-25:56

Is there something He's trying to teach me in this transition period of my employment?

    26:00-26:15

Give thanks in all circumstances, not for all circumstances, and you're like, "Well, how can I do that?" And I would say, "You never will." Unless you embrace that your hardship ultimately is from God.

    26:16-26:17

    You gotta land there.

    26:18-26:26

Whatever it is, whatever the source looks like, you gotta get to the place, this is from God.

    26:27-26:27

    All right?

    26:29-26:35

Number two, discipline is good for me because it is from God and because it proves I'm his child.

    26:37-26:41

Look at where we at, six through eight.

    26:43-26:52

He says, "For the Lord disciplines the one he loves "and chastises every son whom he receives." That's Proverbs 3:12.

    26:53-26:55

But then the Hebrew writer goes on to comment.

    26:55-27:02

He goes, "It is for discipline that you have to endure." God is treating you as sons.

    27:03-27:05

For what son is there whom his father does not discipline?

    27:07-27:17

If you're left without discipline, in which we, excuse me, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

    27:20-27:20

    Stop there.

    27:22-27:24

He says, here's some good news about discipline.

    27:24-27:26

It proves that you're God's child and that he loves you.

    27:27-27:28

    That's awesome.

    27:29-27:38

all that hard stuff that you're going through as a child of God, you're like, this means he loves me and he cares about my growth and maturity and development and that is awesome.

    27:40-27:41

    That is awesome.

    27:42-28:05

Have you ever, have you ever been at the store, maybe you've Walmart or you used to shop at Target before they got all rainbow bright on you Have you ever been to a store, maybe, you know, picking up some essentials at the local store and you see some kid throwing a tantrum?

    28:06-28:07

    You ever seen that?

    28:07-28:11

Some kid screaming he wants to count Chocula and not the grape nuts.

    28:13-28:15

And you totally get that, right?

    28:18-28:23

But what you don't appreciate is the means by which he is pleading his case.

    28:23-28:25

The screaming, the tears and snotting on himself.

    28:26-28:27

    (yells)

    28:27-28:32

"I want to count Chocula!" He's just screaming and acting like a complete jerk.

    28:33-28:36

You ever seen that scene or something like that, right?

    28:36-28:37

Where the kid's just freaking out in the store.

    28:38-28:39

    Have you ever seen that?

    28:42-28:45

Well, have you ever wanted to discipline that kid?

    28:48-28:49

    Nope.

    28:50-28:51

    You really haven't.

    28:53-28:57

You thought he needs discipline, but you've never really wanted the discipline, right?

    28:57-29:00

because you've done exactly what I've done in that situation.

    29:00-29:02

You just kind of walk away going, you better figure that out.

    29:03-29:04

    (congregation laughing)

    29:06-29:06

    Right?

    29:09-29:10

    What's the point here?

    29:13-29:19

You don't discipline somebody else's kid because it's not your kid.

    29:21-29:23

You don't love another child the way you love your own child.

    29:26-29:33

And someone else's kid's maturity is not your job, but your kid's maturity absolutely is your job.

    29:38-29:40

And it's the same with God.

    29:41-29:42

That's what the Hebrew writer is saying here.

    29:42-30:01

He says, "God is not disciplining people "who don't belong to him." For somebody that isn't a believer in Jesus Christ, God isn't giving direction, He isn't shaping them, He isn't maturing them, He's not doing that.

    30:01-30:06

But when you belong to Him, you better believe that He isn't a tentative dad.

    30:10-30:17

You see, we discipline our children because we love them.

    30:19-30:22

And we discipline them because we want what's best for them.

    30:25-30:28

That's the point of discipline, right?

    30:32-30:35

My son will tell you, I've given the same speech to him many times.

    30:37-30:41

Like, look, it's because I love you that we have to do this.

    30:41-30:43

I can't let you act like that.

    30:43-30:44

I can't let you talk like that.

    30:44-30:45

    We've had the conversation.

    30:46-30:50

Someday you're gonna get a job and you can't talk to your future boss that way.

    30:50-30:53

You can't go to your job with that kind of a work ethic.

    30:54-30:58

So we need to discipline you now so you learn some things in preparing you for adulthood.

    30:59-31:01

You can't talk to your mother that way.

    31:02-31:06

Someday you're gonna have a wife and you're gonna make sure that nobody talks to her that way, right?

    31:07-31:09

    That's the purpose of discipline.

    31:10-31:11

You see, God does the same thing to us.

    31:12-31:18

God looks down at us and he's like, "Well, God's like, I can't let you act like that "because you're mine.

    31:19-31:21

"You are called by my name.

    31:21-31:31

"You represent me, you represent my gospel." So I gotta discipline you to change the way you're doing business.

    31:32-31:33

That's how much God loves you.

    31:35-31:39

And that means, church, we rejoice because discipline means you belong to him.

    31:41-31:44

And he loves you enough to be committed to your growth.

    31:47-31:49

Last week we talked about enduring, enduring.

    31:50-31:51

    Why endure?

    31:51-31:52

    Look at verse seven again.

    31:52-31:55

It is for discipline that you have to endure.

    31:57-32:00

You endure because of what God's discipline is doing in you.

    32:01-32:15

So listen, instead of looking at your hardships as something keeping you from what you wanna be, can you look at them as the way God is making you who he wants you to be?

    32:18-32:22

Because if you get that, your whole life will change.

    32:27-32:34

The hardships you're going through, brought into your life by God to make you who he wants you to be.

    32:34-32:38

And you're like, all right, I hear you, Jefe.

    32:38-32:40

What does God want me to be?

    32:41-32:46

Well, that's why number three on your outline, Discipline is good for me because it makes me like Jesus.

    32:50-32:51

Because it makes me like Jesus.

    32:54-32:55

    Look at verse nine.

    32:56-33:02

It says, "Besides this, we've had earthly fathers "who disciplined us and we respected them.

    33:03-33:13

"Shall we not much more be subject "to the Father of spirits and live?" He says, "Be subject to the Father of spirits "and live, and live." It produces life.

    33:13-33:16

He's not talking about eternal life here.

    33:16-33:19

That's already been accomplished through Jesus Christ.

    33:19-33:20

That's not what he's talking about.

    33:20-33:24

He's talking about really living here and now.

    33:27-33:29

Like, what do you mean by that?

    33:30-33:46

You know, Deuteronomy 21, 18 says that you need to, under, this is Old Testament law, under Old Testament, Mosaic, ancient Israel law, Deuteronomy 21, 18, if you had a disobedient child, you were to kill them.

    33:47-33:50

And there was a whole process, bringing them before the leadership, et cetera.

    33:52-33:56

And I've had a lot of people really come after me about that.

    33:58-34:01

But you study the passage, it's pretty clear.

    34:01-34:07

He's not talking about babies or toddlers because he's talking about children who have become gluttons and drunkards.

    34:07-34:09

    He's talking about older children.

    34:09-34:13

And you're like, man, that's kind of hard, isn't it?

    34:15-34:17

And I would say that's hard on the parents.

    34:19-34:25

Because don't you think that that puts the weight of responsibility on the parents unlike anything else?

    34:26-34:33

To say, if I don't figure out disciplining my kid, it could get to the point where he is legally executed.

    34:34-34:34

    That's a burden.

    34:36-34:38

So here's a parenting tip for you.

    34:38-34:41

You're gonna see how it connects to what God does in our lives.

    34:42-34:50

Babies and toddlers are much easier to handle, believe it or not, than when they get older.

    34:52-34:55

They are much easier to handle.

    34:55-35:09

So parents, and the reason I gotta share this with you, I know we have so many parents, so many babies, babies on the way, you know, toddlers, listen parents, you have to hit the lessons hard and early.

    35:12-35:13

    Hard and early.

    35:14-35:17

And there's a lot of resources if you're like, I don't even know where to start.

    35:17-35:31

Get shepherding a child's heart, get creative correction, get focused on the family, just get a good biblical resource, but you gotta get on the lessons hard and early.

    35:34-35:36

You're like, what does this have to do with Hebrews 12?

    35:36-35:37

Here's what it has to do with Hebrews 12.

    35:38-35:42

I think this is why new Christians get hit hard and early.

    35:43-35:49

Did you ever notice somebody gives their life to Christ and all of a sudden their whole life just like capsizes?

    35:49-35:50

    Like what happened?

    35:50-35:52

I came to Christ and I thought it was gonna be easy.

    35:52-35:54

Like, well, that wasn't in the brochure, first of all.

    35:55-35:57

But why is it so hard for new Christians?

    35:58-36:01

Because God's hitting lessons early and hard.

    36:02-36:03

    That's why.

    36:03-36:10

That's why we have baptisms up here and I'm dunking a person, I'm like, "Hey, your life is about to get so hard.

    36:11-36:11

    (laughing)

    36:11-36:12

    You don't even know.

    36:13-36:19

You think it's gonna be..." Well, that can't stop with a bag.

    36:20-36:20

    (congregation laughing)

    36:21-36:23

Subject yourself to the Father and live.

    36:23-36:25

The more obedient you are to God, the more you enjoy life.

    36:27-36:35

You're like, "I don't think that's true." And I would say, "Try it." The more obedient you are to God, the more you enjoy life.

    36:36-36:38

Who's the most miserable person in the world?

    36:38-36:40

We think it's some pagan who doesn't know Jesus.

    36:40-36:42

That's the most miserable person in the world.

    36:43-36:45

You wanna know who the most miserable person in the world is?

    36:45-36:49

Find a Christian that's living in sin and get them to be honest with you.

    36:50-36:52

That person is the most miserable person in the world.

    36:54-36:55

All right, so where were we?

    36:55-37:02

Verse 10, he says, for they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them.

    37:04-37:05

I love that, as it seemed best to them.

    37:05-37:08

Dads, we're trying, we're trying, right?

    37:09-37:10

    We're trying.

    37:11-37:16

Ladies, wives, as it seemed best, we're trying.

    37:22-37:28

But he disciplines, God disciplines us for our good that we may share his holiness.

    37:28-37:31

Okay, ding, ding, ding, here it is, here's the goal, Here's the end game.

    37:32-37:34

God, why am I going through all this hard stuff?

    37:35-37:35

    Here it is.

    37:36-37:38

He wants you to share his holiness.

    37:38-37:40

This is what God is going for.

    37:41-37:42

This is his goal for discipline.

    37:42-37:44

He wants you to share his holiness.

    37:46-37:50

Yes, when you believe in Christ, you are pronounced holy in Jesus, perfect, righteous.

    37:51-37:54

Yes, you are pronounced that in Jesus upon salvation.

    37:55-38:00

But your time on earth is about God making you holy.

    38:01-38:02

    That's sanctification.

    38:02-38:04

God is making you what he's already pronounced you to be.

    38:06-38:08

And that does not happen overnight.

    38:09-38:11

    It is a process.

    38:11-38:14

    It is a painful process.

    38:15-38:17

And I heard a metaphor one time, it always stuck with me.

    38:18-38:23

When you're a Christian, in God's eyes, you're this hunk of marble and he has the chisel.

    38:24-38:36

And he says, I am going to chisel off everything from you that doesn't look like Jesus, that hurts and that's discipline.

    38:38-38:40

So Christian, are you committed to becoming like Jesus?

    38:41-38:47

Because I can for sure tell you that God is committed to you becoming like Jesus.

    38:51-38:55

And that doesn't happen any other way than his discipline.

    38:55-39:01

So, you're like, let me get this straight.

    39:02-39:15

You're saying if I come to Jesus, I'm guaranteed for the rest of my life receiving painful discipline from God.

    39:15-39:16

    Is that what you're saying?

    39:16-39:18

And I'm like, that's exactly what the Bible's saying.

    39:18-39:22

And you're like, well, you're a terrible evangelist because that's not a great sales pitch for Jesus.

    39:23-39:24

    (congregation laughing)

    39:27-39:33

Well, I think that's why verse 11, he says what he does here.

    39:33-39:34

    Look at verse 11.

    39:34-39:55

He says, "For the moment, all discipline seems painful "rather than pleasant, but later, "it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness "to those who have been trained by it." Yeah, discipline does come in all sorts of painful varieties, illness, job loss, financial problems, issues with your spouse, issue with your kids, none of them are pleasant.

    40:00-40:01

But discipline is supposed to be painful.

    40:05-40:08

Discipline is supposed to be painful because otherwise God would never have your attention.

    40:13-40:15

The Bible says, "Discipline your kids with the rod." Why?

    40:17-40:20

Because it's painful and it gets their attention.

    40:23-40:25

At the risk of stepping on toes, but here we go.

    40:26-40:31

You ever heard the parents go, you know, "Declan, stop doing that.

    40:31-40:33

    I'm gonna, I'm gonna count.

    40:33-40:34

    I'm gonna count.

    40:34-40:35

    I'm gonna get to five.

    40:35-40:37

One, two, Declan, I'm gonna count.

    40:38-40:38

    One, one, two.

    40:49-40:54

Declan, it It's because discipline has to hurt in some way.

    40:55-40:57

It has to sting in some way.

    40:59-41:02

But listen, discipline's not pain for the sake of pain.

    41:04-41:11

That's why he says here in verse 11, he goes, "For the moment." Painful rather than pleasant.

    41:11-41:15

Then he says, "But later." Take the long view.

    41:15-41:16

It's for the sake of the results.

    41:18-41:51

And church, if you see discipline for what it is, if you're willing to learn what God is teaching, what happens is God gets a kid who's better, better represents him, better represents his kingdom, and you, kid, get to reap the benefit of that, which according to verse 11 is the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

    41:53-42:01

The thing that every single person on the planet is pursuing is peace, a settledness.

    42:01-42:09

And he says, here's how it comes as a result of God's discipline, peaceful fruit of righteousness.

    42:10-42:15

So yes, the life of faith is a life of God's discipline.

    42:15-42:16

    It builds you up.

    42:16-42:17

    It makes you like Jesus.

    42:17-42:18

    It results in peace.

    42:20-42:26

And the question I got to leave in your lap is this, are you going to be the whiny kid who refuses to learn?

    42:28-42:35

Or are you going to see the pain that you're going through as God's tool to make you better?

    42:37-42:37

    Let's pray.

    42:39-42:52

Father in heaven, I confess before you in front of my brothers and sisters that I don't like discipline from you.

    42:53-42:58

I have resisted it and I have complained about it instead of learning from it.

    42:58-43:02

I've done that for too many times in my life.

    43:03-43:05

So God, I pray that through your word, you're changing me.

    43:07-43:09

that I can look at the hardships differently.

    43:10-43:18

Yes, it's hard, but that I can grow in being thankful in them, even when I can't be thankful for them.

    43:20-43:28

Let me see these things, God, as being from you, as being proof of ownership, as things that you're bringing into my life to make me like your son.

    43:29-44:30

And I pray for my brothers and sisters here and those that are watching this stream or listening to this podcast later or whatever, God, I pray that there would be a true repentance, a true changing of our minds, that we see your discipline not as this aggravating, frustrating pain that you're callously letting us go through because you don't care, but instead it's a well-measured application of your love that you've called us to be. Father I thank you ahead of time for the changes you're making in our minds. Hear your word that's going to result in the changes that will be made in our actions. Discipline us, Father, because you know best. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Hebrews, chapter 12. Let's just pause for a second. I know Pastor Taylor prayed for me, but I'm going to ask you to pray for me right now so that I would be faithful to clearly and accurately communicate God's Word. And I'll pray for you to receive it, all right?

    01:13-01:14

    Let's pray.

    01:16-01:19

Father, your word tells us that you have exalted your word even above your name.

    01:20-01:24

This is a big deal to you and it should be to us.

    01:26-01:34

And Father, we've all come in here tired at times, distracted at times, not ready.

    01:36-01:44

I pray, Father, just now that you would do a supernatural work to prepare us to hear what your word has to say.

    01:47-01:48

    Nothing for show.

    01:50-01:51

Father, we wanna sincerely follow you.

    01:53-01:54

    We wanna know you.

    01:56-01:57

We wanna live lives of worship.

    01:59-02:04

So may your word equip us to do that just now, Father, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

    02:05-02:07

Hebrews chapter 12, we're gonna be looking at the first three verses.

    02:08-02:08

    Are you there?

    02:11-02:46

It says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded "by so great a cloud of witnesses, "let us also lay aside every weight "and sin which clings so closely "and let us run with endurance "the race that is set before us." Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

    02:48-02:59

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted.

    03:02-03:08

Today, we are going to talk about running.

    03:11-03:12

    Who are my runners here?

    03:12-03:15

Raise your hand if you enjoy running.

    03:16-03:17

    One of you.

    03:18-03:19

    Exactly one.

    03:22-03:26

Sorry to put you on the spot, but that's, Doug, that's one more than we should have in this room.

    03:29-03:31

    Because I hate running.

    03:35-03:38

    I hate running.

    03:41-03:42

How much do I hate running?

    03:42-03:43

I'll give you a couple examples.

    03:43-03:44

    I got new shoes.

    03:45-03:46

Do you see these bad boys?

    03:48-03:52

I'm like, I won't lose those in the dark or miles away or anything.

    03:53-03:55

And I'm like, boy, those are really bright.

    03:56-03:57

    Somehow I missed it.

    03:57-04:01

I got them home, looked at the box and the box said running across the top.

    04:02-04:03

    I'm like, well, I'm a hypocrite.

    04:05-04:06

Like guess what you guys won't be doing?

    04:07-04:07

    Running.

    04:08-04:10

So now I kind of view them as rescues, right?

    04:11-04:13

You're a rescue dog, I rescued your shoes.

    04:13-04:17

You're never gonna have to run, ever.

    04:18-04:19

How much do I hate running?

    04:20-04:26

My wife knows because she got me this shirt and she saw this, she goes, this is you.

    04:27-04:29

    Not this one, this one.

    04:30-04:35

If you're listening on the podcast or way back there, It says, ready, set, nope.

    04:43-04:45

Look, to be fair, I used to run.

    04:46-04:50

I used to be an athlete a couple of decades ago.

    04:52-04:57

So I used to run and I hated every step of it.

    04:58-05:04

Every step, even when I was in shape and 40 pounds lighter and I hated every step.

    05:05-05:08

I was attacked over the course of my running career.

    05:08-05:11

I was attacked by so many dogs.

    05:11-05:23

So many dogs came after me out of their yard, out of breath, every joint in my body, excruciating.

    05:25-05:31

Have you ever seen somebody running like you're driving down the road and you see, have you ever seen somebody running?

    05:32-05:33

Have you ever looked at their face?

    05:36-05:47

Because I've met people that they're like, "I love running." I'm like, "I've never seen that guy." Every single person that I see running looks like they're being tortured.

    05:47-05:51

    They're like, right?

    05:52-05:53

    Nobody enjoys running, okay?

    05:53-05:54

    So stop pretending.

    05:57-06:03

Just say you're being nebby about what's going on in the neighborhood or something, but nobody loves running.

    06:05-06:09

    But, but, spiritually.

    06:13-06:19

In this passage, we see there is a striving that follows faith.

    06:20-06:29

There is spiritually an intense effort on our part, which is why a common metaphor for the Christian life in the New Testament is running a race.

    06:30-06:37

And did you know the Greek word for race is the word agona, which is where we get the word appropriately, agony.

    06:43-06:44

    That is true.

    06:46-06:50

But listen, when we talk about running the race, we're not talking about competing against one another.

    06:52-06:52

Like, well, what is it about?

    06:52-06:54

Listen, you're gonna wanna write this down.

    06:55-06:58

It's striving through suffering to get to the finish line.

    06:58-06:59

    That's the metaphor.

    06:59-07:04

It's striving through suffering to get to the finish line.

    07:06-07:07

    That's why it's called a race.

    07:07-07:10

I am striving through suffering to get to the finish line.

    07:14-07:30

And here's the problem, church, especially in our culture and even in this church, Too many Christians have reduced the definition of faith to mean that I intellectually agree with a doctrinal statement.

    07:32-07:34

And for some people, that's what faith is.

    07:35-07:39

I just agree with a doctrinal statement.

    07:42-07:44

That is not what faith is.

    07:45-07:53

Many years ago, about the time of my life that I did run, But many years ago, I ran a senior high boys' wilderness camp.

    07:53-07:57

And in this wilderness camp, I would take, oh, it was, some of you guys would love this.

    07:57-08:02

We went rappelling and rock climbing and hiking and canoeing and all that stuff.

    08:02-08:04

    It was a blast.

    08:04-08:09

But I remember there was this one kid in particular, we were on one of our hikes, and he was just the whole time,

    08:10-08:10

    (imitates dog barking)

    08:10-08:12

    just complaining about everything.

    08:13-08:15

And I'm like, what is the matter?

    08:16-08:17

Like on the trail, I turn around, I'm like, what's the matter?

    08:18-08:31

He goes, "Why are we doing so much (beep)?" And I said, "What did you think was gonna happen "when you signed up for wilderness camp?" And I had a moment I'm not proud of.

    08:33-08:35

I was frustrated because hiking's kind of like running.

    08:38-08:39

    A pain.

    08:39-08:49

But I had this moment I wasn't proud of that I said to this senior high kid, I said, "You know what, how about this?

    08:49-09:11

"Next year, we'll have beanbag camp "and we'll just get beanbags and Nintendos "and we'll just lay around and play video games all week." And as soon as those words came out of my mouth, I'm like, "You are such a jerk." And I'm like, now I'm thinking I get to apologize to this kid and in this moment of my brain processing, he goes, "That would be so cool."

    09:12-09:13

    (congregation laughing)

    09:14-09:15

And that became a thing for years.

    09:16-09:25

People are like, "When can we do beanbag camp?" But listen, that's the kind of Christianity that people want.

    09:30-09:32

But that is not in the brochure.

    09:35-09:50

Listen to me, if you find your faith to be convenient and easy and always making you feel good, You don't have faith by any biblical definition.

    09:52-09:55

Because Hebrews 11 showed us what faith is.

    09:55-10:01

It's a belief in God's word that shapes every decision of your life.

    10:03-10:09

It moves you to work hard for God's kingdom while you wait on his promises.

    10:09-10:19

And that's why after he gives this whole list of people, a plethora of Old Testament saints and what faith looked like in their lives.

    10:20-10:34

Now the exhortation to the church, to us, he says, "Because of these witnesses," he goes, "Now run." Because real faith is striving through suffering to get to the finish line.

    10:34-10:35

    That's what real faith is.

    10:37-10:42

I have to ask you, does that describe your Christian journey right now?

    10:48-10:49

    How's your run?

    10:50-10:52

Are you running hard right now?

    10:57-11:01

Are you running hard in your Christian race right now?

    11:01-11:02

Running like you want to win?

    11:05-11:09

Are you running right now like you wanna finish strong?

    11:16-11:17

    Or have you slowed down?

    11:21-11:34

Has the agony and the dogs and the breathlessness and the sweat, has it made you just wanna quit?

    11:37-11:38

    Is that where you are?

    11:41-11:53

Do you notice three times, we just looked at three verses and in each verse, the same word shows up, some variation of the same word, the word endurance, endure, enduring.

    11:56-12:01

That literally means to remain under the challenge.

    12:01-12:02

    That's what that means.

    12:04-12:05

In other words, it means to suffer.

    12:07-12:12

In other words, it means this, church, listen, you gotta keep running when you don't feel like running.

    12:13-12:14

    That's what that means.

    12:17-12:22

We need endurance in this Christian race.

    12:23-12:27

And I have to ask you, church, are you wearing out?

    12:30-12:31

Like, well, how do I know?

    12:33-12:34

How do I know that I'm wearing out?

    12:34-12:35

    Well, there's signs.

    12:36-12:37

There's signs that you're wearing out.

    12:39-12:41

A big one is this, how's your prayer life?

    12:42-12:46

When was the last time you got on your face and actually prayed instead of just saying your prayers?

    12:47-12:48

    Because there's a huge difference.

    12:48-12:53

And I would also say, when was the last time that you saw a prayer answered?

    12:53-12:57

That you're like, I prayed for this and I saw exactly how God answered.

    12:58-12:59

When was the last time you saw that?

    13:04-13:05

    Are you slowing down?

    13:08-13:09

When was the last time you were in the Word?

    13:11-13:14

And I don't just mean reading the one little verse at the top of your devotional.

    13:14-13:23

I mean like in God's Word, studying, meditating, and memorizing, and praying it back to God.

    13:23-13:28

When was the last time you really got into the word like you wanted it?

    13:32-13:39

When was the last time that you shared the gospel with someone because you had a burden for their spiritual condition?

    13:39-13:42

Or you invited them to come to Harvest to hear the gospel?

    13:43-13:45

When was the last time you've done that?

    13:46-13:47

    Are you slowing down?

    13:51-13:57

Here's a big one, 'cause there's a lot of people in this church who serve in so many capacities.

    13:58-14:07

Let me ask you this, right now in your service, whatever capacity you serve, are you serving out of obligation?

    14:09-14:16

Or like, you know what, I'm doing this, but deep down, if we're gonna be honest, I really don't want to.

    14:17-14:19

I don't feel like doing this anymore.

    14:20-14:26

I'm doing it just because they're expecting me and they're kind of counting on me, but I really don't wanna do this.

    14:27-14:28

That's a sign that you're running out of endurance.

    14:30-14:36

All of these are signs that you're running out of endurance and that's why he tells us, endure, endure, endure.

    14:36-14:39

You gotta keep running when you don't feel like running.

    14:41-14:50

And listen, I can tell you how to run and I can give you some reasons why, but I can't give you the want to.

    14:51-14:52

I can't give you the heart.

    14:53-14:54

    I can't do that.

    14:56-15:14

You see, I can't come beside you and say, "Hey, you should run the race." You're like, "I know, I should." And I'm like, "Well, what's the problem?" And you're like, "I just don't want to." I'm overwhelmed right now in my life and I feel beat down.

    15:15-15:18

And look, I know I need to run, I just don't wanna run.

    15:21-15:29

Well, like a doctor today, I just, I wanna properly diagnose your problem.

    15:31-15:32

The word of God will do that.

    15:33-15:39

Because only when you properly diagnose your problem, why am I not motivated?

    15:39-15:40

    Why am I not enduring?

    15:41-15:43

Why am I slowing down and wearing out on my race?

    15:43-15:52

If we can diagnose why, then we can seek the remedy, and then we can get motivated.

    15:54-15:58

So let's get real and see why I'm not motivated to run.

    16:01-16:07

Why I'm not motivated to run the race of faith as I should, number one, write this down, I sabotage myself.

    16:08-16:11

Here's a reason maybe you're not enduring in your race.

    16:11-16:13

    I sabotage myself.

    16:13-16:14

    Look at verse one again.

    16:14-16:40

It says, "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." So one reason that some of you, some of you are not running the race as you should is because you sabotaged yourself.

    16:41-16:48

You believe in Christ, you're in the race, but you've weighed yourself down.

    16:49-16:51

    It's a pretty obvious picture, isn't it?

    16:52-16:55

Like if I called you up and I said, "Hey, you wanna go for a run?

    16:55-16:57

"Don't worry, that's never gonna happen.

    16:57-17:08

"You will never get that phone call, but we can pretend." But if I called you up and said, "Hey, do you wanna go for a run?" And you're like, "I got my fluorescent shoes, Pastor Jeff.

    17:08-17:14

"I am there." and you come to my house, I'm like, okay, first I'm gonna need you to carry this on your run.

    17:15-17:18

You're like, what am I gonna do with this?

    17:18-17:19

Are we building a house when we get there?

    17:19-17:20

No, I just need you to carry that.

    17:22-17:23

    Oh, here, carry this too.

    17:27-17:29

Who wants to go running with me carrying these things?

    17:30-17:30

    Anybody?

    17:32-17:32

    Doug?

    17:33-17:35

    Doug still says yes.

    17:37-17:38

I love you brother, but you are a maniac.

    17:41-17:42

    He probably would.

    17:44-17:48

But even he would admit, it suddenly just got a lot harder, didn't it?

    17:49-17:49

    To run?

    17:49-17:52

How many steps do you think you'd make it running with these?

    17:55-17:58

You're like, I'm not sure that I'd wanna run carrying these things.

    17:59-18:00

    He said, that's the point.

    18:00-18:01

    That's what he's saying here.

    18:01-18:10

He's saying some of you are not enduring in your Christian race because you're carrying all this extra stuff you don't need to be carrying.

    18:10-18:11

And you're like, well, what is that?

    18:12-18:13

I'm like sweating just holding this.

    18:15-18:16

You're like, well, what is that?

    18:16-18:22

Well, for the Jews that he was writing to, it was like the Judaism, dead works kind of thing.

    18:24-18:27

But for us, you know, it can be religion.

    18:28-18:32

For some people it's carrying this burden of, I gotta make God happy.

    18:32-18:38

I gotta do all these things to try to, Please God, and you're not running as you should because that's weight that you don't need to be carrying.

    18:40-18:44

And for a lot of you also, it could be shame.

    18:46-18:47

    It could be shame.

    18:50-18:57

You're hesitant to run because you don't have confidence that maybe the weight is like your past mistakes.

    18:58-19:02

You're like, I know I need to run, but I've never really done things the way I should.

    19:02-19:04

And you don't know some of the things I've done in my past.

    19:04-19:34

and you're carrying this past shame, and I really can put this stuff down, but you're carrying this stuff, and you're like, "Why am I not running as I should?" And that's why the Hebrew writer says, "Look, you gotta get rid of this stuff, because it's a lot easier to run when you're not carrying all this unnecessary stuff." You gotta drop the burdens.

    19:34-19:35

You're like, well, what are they?

    19:37-19:38

Well, he says the weight, right?

    19:38-19:39

    We talked about that.

    19:39-19:44

    It's former Judaism, shame, religion.

    19:46-19:51

But the next thing he says that we do to sabotage ourselves is sin.

    19:53-19:57

Notice the Bible says it clings, it entangles.

    19:59-20:01

The word literally means to gather around.

    20:01-20:07

And there, I guess, using our running metaphor, the picture is this, you're going for a run and somebody tied your shoelaces together.

    20:08-20:10

That makes it hard to run too, doesn't it?

    20:15-20:20

Listen, some of you can't run your race confidently because of a pornography addiction.

    20:23-20:25

Why am I not running like I should?

    20:28-20:30

You've tied your shoelaces together with pornography.

    20:31-20:33

That's why you're not running like you should.

    20:36-20:41

For others, maybe it's a drug and alcohol addiction, drug or alcohol addiction.

    20:44-20:50

Man, I wanna run, I just don't, why am I not, why is my thing with Jesus, why does it seem so?

    20:50-20:52

    You're sabotaging yourself, that's why.

    20:55-20:56

Put the bottle down and run.

    20:59-21:02

For some people it's worrying about everything.

    21:02-21:03

And that's a sin, by the way.

    21:04-21:08

We almost make it look as a virtue, like, "I'm just kind of a worrier.

    21:08-21:09

    I'm just kind of a worry." That's a sin.

    21:11-21:20

And for some people, that's why they're not running as they should because the sin of worry has them tangled up and they're not running like they should.

    21:26-21:29

You're never gonna have endurance if you sabotage yourself.

    21:35-21:36

    You gotta drop the weight.

    21:38-21:39

    You want some inspiration?

    21:40-21:42

He gives it to us right here, the cloud of witnesses.

    21:44-21:51

All the people that he mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11, they demonstrated a life of faith.

    21:51-21:52

    We went through all that.

    21:53-21:54

We saw the highs and lows.

    21:56-21:58

We saw the victory and the agony.

    21:58-22:03

We saw the God showed up and we saw the, I'm waiting for God to show up.

    22:05-22:13

And all of these people that we've studied over these past several weeks testify to the greatness of running the race.

    22:13-22:16

And I promise you, you track them down in heaven.

    22:17-22:26

Keep this list, you track them down in heaven and you grab them and you say, Tell me about the stuff that I read about you in God's word.

    22:26-22:29

Every single one of them are going to say it was worth it.

    22:31-22:36

Everything that I endured was worth it.

    22:39-22:44

And see, we're encouraged by people who went before us.

    22:46-22:49

And there's a real sense in which we should draw inspiration from them.

    22:51-22:52

And this is a whole nother sermon.

    22:54-23:03

I didn't want to really bark up this tree, but I was thinking a lot this week about the people that God's put in my life, past and present, who inspire me.

    23:04-23:11

Part of the witnesses, so to speak, who inspire me to run, I think of Pastor Bob, who went to be with the Lord.

    23:14-23:19

He taught me everything I know about being a pastor, and I am not 1% of the pastor that he was.

    23:21-23:25

And I think of my friend Mike Singer, who died in a motorcycle accident years ago.

    23:26-23:29

Just what an influence he had on me, the way he loved his family.

    23:31-23:38

Just his trust in the Lord and the joy that he just constantly seemed to be ringing through his life.

    23:41-23:46

I think of Barnabas, who's going to be coming over here and preaching in October.

    23:47-23:49

and the work that he does for the Lord.

    23:49-23:57

You see, I look at these guys and I could go on and on, but my point is I look at these guys and I say, I wanna run the race like they did.

    24:01-24:08

But then I think also, I should be motivated by the fact that I'm a witness too.

    24:10-24:10

    Right?

    24:12-24:13

And there are people that are watching me.

    24:15-24:31

And you know how motivated I am knowing that there is this enormous herd of little people back there that are evaluating the Christian race based on how I'm running it.

    24:34-24:40

And if you're a leader in this church, serving in any capacity, they're watching you too.

    24:43-24:45

How do they see us running the race?

    24:47-24:48

So do you want endurance for your race?

    24:50-24:52

Now you go, it's so hard to run the race.

    24:52-24:55

Well, stop sabotaging yourself and it'll get a lot easier, all right?

    24:57-25:00

Number two, why am I not motivated to run the race as I should?

    25:02-25:03

    Why sabotage myself?

    25:03-25:04

    That's a problem.

    25:05-25:05

    Here's number two.

    25:06-25:07

    I'm too nearsighted.

    25:08-25:09

    Look at verse two.

    25:12-25:24

It says, "Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

    25:27-25:37

You see, for some of you, your problem is this, you don't live like you really believe that there is a finish line.

    25:41-25:48

Maybe you have a health issue, or worse yet, somebody you love very much, that's very close to you has a health issue.

    25:49-25:51

And you're like, you know what?

    25:51-25:52

    Nothing's ever gonna change.

    25:53-25:54

    Nothing's ever gonna change.

    25:54-25:58

Well, that kind of attitude results in no motivation to run.

    26:00-26:04

Or maybe you have a spouse that doesn't know Jesus and you're like, my marriage stinks.

    26:07-26:08

    Nothing's ever gonna change.

    26:09-26:11

And you've just resolved yourself to that.

    26:11-26:12

    Nothing's ever gonna change.

    26:12-26:16

And when you resolve yourself to that, And that results in no motivation.

    26:21-26:33

You see, like a real race, if you don't think there's a finish line, you're not going to be motivated to run very long, are you?

    26:36-26:39

Like, who's going to sign up to run endlessly?

    26:40-26:41

    Nobody.

    26:44-26:46

The problem is some of you are just too nearsighted.

    26:47-26:54

You're too focused on the here and now because today's problem was also yesterday's problem and it's gonna be tomorrow's problem.

    26:55-26:57

    So why bother running?

    26:57-26:58

But look at what he says here.

    26:59-26:59

    Here's the game changer.

    27:00-27:04

He says, "Looking to Jesus." Don't miss this.

    27:05-27:06

    This will change your life.

    27:06-27:10

It says that Jesus was able to endure the cross.

    27:13-27:17

because of the joy that was set before him.

    27:17-27:18

    You're like, well, what joy?

    27:18-27:20

    He tells us right here.

    27:20-27:24

He says he's seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

    27:24-27:26

    Like, what's the point?

    27:26-27:26

    Here's the point.

    27:27-27:33

Jesus was able to endure suffering because he knew what was on the other side of the cross.

    27:37-27:50

You see, if Jesus was nearsighted like we are often, if Jesus was that nearsighted like I am, Jesus would say, "What, you mean to be humiliated "and executed by these people?

    27:52-27:57

"Hard pass, I'm not doing that." Like, well, why did you do it, Jesus?

    27:58-28:00

Because he knew what was on the other side of it.

    28:00-28:02

He wasn't so nearsighted, you see?

    28:03-28:04

    He saw the finish line.

    28:06-28:09

Jesus was like, "Hey, the cross isn't forever.

    28:11-28:48

"The shame isn't forever, but the glory "that is on the other side of being seated "at the right hand of God, that is forever." And I would be remiss not to quote awesome verse, Romans 8, 18, says, "For I consider that the sufferings "of this present time are not worth comparing "to the glory that is to be revealed to us." Look, I would never run a marathon.

    28:49-28:50

You're like, yeah, I think you made that clear.

    28:52-28:53

I would never run a marathon.

    28:55-28:57

You're like, yeah, and I can tell by looking at you that you never have.

    28:58-28:59

Look, I would never run a marathon.

    29:03-29:38

But, if you told me for sure, promise, reality, if you told me that there is a cure for autism at the finish line of this marathon, I promise you, I will run and I will crawl and I will puke and I will claw my way to that finish line and I will have a smile on my face the whole way if there's such a glorious thing at the finish line.

    29:41-29:42

    Do you see the motivation?

    29:43-29:44

    Do you get it?

    29:47-29:48

    Paul got it.

    29:50-29:51

    Heaven's gonna be awesome.

    29:51-29:56

So can we just, please people, can we suffer for 15 minutes until we get there?

    29:58-30:01

Can you take your eyes off of yourself for a minute?

    30:01-30:04

Can you take your eyes off of the obstacles?

    30:04-30:07

And can you take your eyes off of the other runners?

    30:07-30:11

And can you put your eyes on Jesus and everything that he's promised?

    30:13-30:18

Because he is, he tells us here, the founder and perfecter of our faith.

    30:20-30:27

Well, that's huge because he began our faith and he will complete it.

    30:28-30:30

and there's an eternal glory on the other side of suffering.

    30:32-30:36

So, do you want endurance for your race?

    30:38-30:40

    Stop being so nearsighted.

    30:42-30:46

I have it on good authority that things will not always be as they are now.

    30:49-30:58

And then finally, why I'm not motivated to run the race of faith as I should.

    30:58-31:00

Number three, people have worn me out.

    31:02-31:03

    People have worn me out.

    31:03-31:04

    Look at verse three.

    31:06-31:27

It says, "Consider him who," look at this, "endured from sinners such hostility against himself so that you may not grow weary or faint-hearted." Nothing saps your motivation to endure like dealing with hard people, nothing.

    31:30-31:34

I've been in pastor ministry now for like two and a half decades or so.

    31:35-31:52

And I can tell you this emphatically, mission trips, sermon prep, administrative work, hospital visits, small group meetings, No one ever quits running the race because of those things.

    31:54-31:56

But deal with people who are against you.

    31:59-31:59

    And that is brutal.

    32:05-32:07

Deal with people making accusations against you.

    32:11-32:13

Deal with people who are gossiping about you.

    32:15-32:17

Deal with people who are slandering you.

    32:20-32:21

    Or how about this one?

    32:23-32:37

Get the email from people that say, "Hey, we're gonna have a meeting "because I didn't like "what you said, what you did, what you wore, "insert thing here.

    32:37-32:45

"And I'm gonna have a meeting because I didn't like this." People wear you out.

    32:47-32:48

    They just do, right?

    32:50-32:51

Look at the verse again, look at verse three.

    32:51-33:09

It says, "Consider him." "Consider him." You know, I did a lot of reading this week, studying this, "Consider him." You know what, like, the consensus was about that?

    33:09-33:14

Everybody was like, It was like, Jesus had it worse than you did.

    33:16-33:17

    That's what he's saying here.

    33:18-33:19

You're going through some hard stuff.

    33:20-33:21

Jesus had it worse than you did.

    33:23-33:24

Do you think that's the point here?

    33:24-33:27

When it says consider him, does that really help anybody?

    33:28-33:31

I worked with this guy many years ago.

    33:31-33:34

He was what you call a story topper.

    33:35-33:36

Do you know a story topper?

    33:37-33:38

Don't point at anybody in the room.

    33:39-33:40

Do you know what I'm talking about by a story topper?

    33:40-33:41

    It's obnoxious.

    33:42-33:45

But here's how a conversation with this guy would go.

    33:45-33:52

He'd be like, "Man, I'm really tired today." He'd say, "Oh, you think you're tired?

    33:55-34:06

"I haven't slept in 75 hours." I'd be like, "Well, I guess the reason I'm tired "is I've just been working a lot." "Oh, you think you've been working a lot?

    34:08-34:09

"I just got done with six doubles."

    34:10-34:10

    (congregation laughing)

    34:11-34:12

And I had four triples before that.

    34:13-34:15

    Like, I don't think a triple's a thing.

    34:15-34:16

    (congregation laughing)

    34:17-34:18

Like, well, I guess I've been working a lot.

    34:20-34:22

I've needed the overtime because I'm broke.

    34:23-34:24

    Oh, you think you're broke?

    34:25-34:26

    (congregation laughing)

    34:28-34:30

I got negative 750 in my bank account.

    34:30-34:31

    (congregation laughing)

    34:34-34:37

And at that point, I'm like, do you think you're helping?

    34:38-34:39

    'Cause it isn't.

    34:40-34:42

You see, that's how a lot of people treat this passage.

    34:42-34:43

    You're like, consider Jesus.

    34:44-34:49

Like, man, my life is hard, but not as hard as Jesus, so that's okay.

    34:54-34:55

I don't think that's the point at all.

    34:56-35:01

Listen, here's the point, 'cause this is game changer stuff.

    35:02-35:05

I say that a lot, but it kind of all is, all right?

    35:06-35:15

Jesus dealt with so much ugliness and nastiness from people so much.

    35:15-35:16

    How did Jesus endure?

    35:19-35:23

How did Jesus persevere under the hostility of sinners?

    35:28-35:32

There are so many passages we could look at, so many.

    35:34-35:46

But for today, there's one thing that Jesus said more than anything else that shows us how he endured.

    35:46-35:52

This one statement showed us how he endured such hostility from sinners.

    35:53-35:59

And this statement came when Jesus was on the cross, when he was mocked, humiliated and brutally executed.

    36:00-36:03

Luke 23, 34, look at his statement.

    36:04-36:16

And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, "for they know not what they do." Look at this.

    36:16-36:24

This was the ultimate display of Jesus' endurance of hostility from sinners, because this was the ultimate hostility.

    36:25-36:38

And in this one statement, in this one statement, We learn a lot about how Jesus endured hostility from sinners, all right?

    36:41-36:42

I'm gonna go through this very quickly.

    36:42-36:48

Jesus endured hostility from sinners by, letter A, right this time, understanding their condition.

    36:50-36:50

    Do you see that?

    36:51-36:56

Jesus said, "For they know not what they do." He understood their condition.

    36:56-37:00

And I know somebody would say, "Oh, they knew exactly what they were doing.

    37:01-37:04

"They were crying out for his death." They knew exactly what he was doing.

    37:04-37:14

And I would say, did they understand the full weight and impact of the choices they were making?

    37:15-37:16

    According to Jesus, no.

    37:16-37:20

Jesus said they didn't fully understand what they were doing.

    37:21-37:22

    So yes, they were guilty.

    37:22-37:23

    Yes, they were responsible.

    37:24-37:25

    Yes, absolutely.

    37:26-37:32

But according to Jesus, They didn't understand the gravity of all of this.

    37:34-37:35

    They were blind.

    37:35-37:37

They were so blinded by sin.

    37:42-37:45

Second way Jesus endured hostility from sinners was by praying for them.

    37:46-37:46

    Do you notice that?

    37:46-37:52

He cried out, "Father, Father." He's praying here for them, right?

    37:52-37:57

His dying breaths could have been spent cursing them.

    38:00-38:00

    Right?

    38:02-38:03

They're standing down there mocking Him.

    38:05-38:07

He could have been cursing them.

    38:09-38:10

    To hell with you people!

    38:15-38:23

But instead, through the agony of the cross, Jesus used what energy He had left to pray for them.

    38:25-38:28

And finally, how did Jesus endure hostility from sinners?

    38:28-38:29

    It was by loving them.

    38:31-38:32

    Father, forgive them.

    38:33-38:34

    Did you see that?

    38:34-38:37

He cried out for their forgiveness.

    38:39-38:47

The people who mocked him as he died, I can't think of anything more loving than that.

    38:47-38:48

    I tried this week.

    38:49-38:53

Is there a scenario where you could demonstrate a greater amount of love and grace?

    38:53-38:56

I could not think of one than this statement right here.

    38:57-39:02

So everybody look up here, look up here, take a page.

    39:05-39:06

    Yes, it's hard.

    39:07-39:10

    Yes, this is counter intuitive.

    39:12-39:16

But when he says consider Jesus, this is exactly what he's talking about.

    39:18-39:30

Consider and emulate Jesus Christ, Because listen, you're going to faithfully endure when you truly understand that the people who hate you are broken people.

    39:33-39:41

And yeah, there's one level I'm sure where they do know and understand and are guilty and responsible for the choices that they're making.

    39:42-39:44

But deep down, they are broken and blind people.

    39:46-39:47

And you need to remember that.

    39:48-39:55

The people that hate you and mistreat you and gossip and slander and accuse you, they're broken people.

    39:59-40:13

You're not gonna be worn out with them if instead of complaining about them or slandering them back, try this, try loving them.

    40:15-40:18

Try praying God's grace upon them.

    40:19-40:20

    (congregation laughing)

    40:23-40:25

So do you want endurance for your race?

    40:28-40:29

Stop letting people wear you out.

    40:32-40:35

I'm gonna ask if our elders would come forward in our worship team.

    40:38-40:40

We're going to close with communion.

    40:42-41:10

And I love this, this passage says, "Look to Christ, consider Christ." And I would say, "There's no better way to do that "than to gather around his table." Jesus Christ endured the worst that man could do to him, and yet remained perfect and sinless.

    41:12-41:17

And Jesus finished his race all the way to the finish line.

    41:19-41:21

    His victory is your victory.

    41:25-41:42

Your sin and shame are taken away and you can run your race to win, knowing that because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, You've already won.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Which of these 3 do you think hinders your race the most…?

    - Self-Sabotage

    - Near-Sightedness

    - Dealing with Difficult People

  3. How do the “cloud of witnesses” (Heb 12:1) inspire you to endure in your race? Who have you known personally that has inspired you?

  4. How did Jesus endure hostility from sinners (Hebrews 12:3 - and see Luke 23:34)? How does Jesus inspire and empower you to do the same?

Bonus: Would you say that you “hate” running or that you “despise” running?
