You can turn your Bibles to James chapter three, verses one through 12.

    00:41-00:47

You know, some of you may not know this, but I used to be an intern at Harvest over 10 years ago during the early days of the church.

    00:47-00:50

We met at Marshall Middle School.

    00:50-00:56

Pastor Jeff graciously let me shadow him for a year and even preach four times during that internship.

    00:57-01:01

And also a part of that internship was giving announcements on Sunday.

    01:03-01:41

And as Jeff whoops, announcements aren't anybody's favorite thing do. I'd rather preach a sermon any day of the week, they come up here and give announcements. It's a bit awkward. You don't want to be over prepared and stiffly read from a piece of paper, but you also don't want to be under prepared and have no idea what you're gonna say. And back then I had no experience, so standing in front of a room of people and talking was a bit uncomfortable. It I was called to give an announcement about a mission trip fundraiser.

    01:42-01:47

And to ease the tension in my stomach, I tried to make an off-the-cuff joke.

    01:48-01:49

    It didn't go very well.

    01:50-01:55

It was cringey, it was unintentionally rude, and it went over like a lead balloon.

    01:56-01:57

    No one laughed.

    01:58-02:01

A hush fell over the crowd.

    02:02-02:07

And to avoid offending people with the same exact announcement, I'm not gonna tell you my joke.

    02:09-02:12

Even though some of you the entire time will be thinking, what was his joke?

    02:12-02:12

    What did he say?

    02:12-02:13

    What did he say?

    02:13-02:14

None of your business, don't worry about it.

    02:16-02:22

Let's just say it was so bad that Pastor Jeff had to jump on stage and try to walk that horse back to the stable.

    02:23-02:28

But unfortunately, that horse was miles down the road and there was no hope of bringing it back.

    02:29-02:38

And hopefully, history won't repeat itself and Jeff's standing right here, waiting to jump on stage as close as he can just in case history repeats itself again.

    02:39-02:45

You know, we laugh in retrospect about that moment, but it wasn't very funny when it happened.

    02:46-02:52

I think back to that moment, and many like it throughout my life, and I think to myself, what was I thinking?

    02:52-02:54

    Why did I say that?

    02:54-02:59

As soon as I made that joke, I instantly regretted it.

    03:00-03:01

    We've all been there, right?

    03:02-03:04

This happened to anybody else besides me.

    03:04-03:07

Don't you dare leave me alone up here like I was 11 years ago.

    03:07-03:10

It's happened to every single one of us.

    03:11-03:14

You let a careless comment slip out to your spouse.

    03:15-03:20

You join in with your friends in making crude jokes that you know are out of bounds.

    03:21-03:25

You blow up at your kids for the millionth time this week.

    03:26-03:34

You say something extremely idiotic that you wish you could just grab out of the air and shove back down your throat, but you can't.

    03:36-03:39

You can never ever take back what you say.

    03:40-03:50

We're in the middle of our sermon series in the book of James, which is filled with difficult, yet necessary commands for how we are to live out our faith as followers of Christ.

    03:51-04:00

And James has shown us over and over and over again that true faith leads to submission and obedience to the word of God.

    04:00-04:04

True faith leads to a transformed life.

    04:05-04:11

And this morning we're gonna learn that true faith leads to transformed speech.

    04:13-04:18

And a few weeks ago, Pastor Jeff touched upon the importance of our words in James 1:26.

    04:19-04:28

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle or control his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.

    04:29-05:14

worthless. Simply put, do not claim to know and love Jesus if you do not seek to filter your words and control what you say. Do not claim that Jesus is your Lord when your tongue is completely out of control because your tongue is connected to your heart. Your words say a lot about you and reveal who you really are. And James ramps up the seriousness of our words in chapter 3 verses 1 through 12 and clearly lays out why and how we should watch our mouths. This isn't just a minor issue that we should put on the back burner of our to-do list.

    05:14-05:29

This is an essential aspect of our faith that we cannot ignore. And I'll be honest with you, whenever Pastor Jeff assigned me this passage a few months ago, I one of the things I struggle with the most.

    05:31-05:39

But the Lord has really used these verses to take me to the mat this week and point me to my desperate need for Him.

    05:40-05:42

And I hope the same will be true of you as well.

    05:43-05:46

So let's go to the Lord in prayer and ask for His help because we all definitely need it.

    05:49-05:56

Father, we come before you and we ask and pray that we would be a people that tremble at your word.

    05:57-06:01

We not only seek to believe it, but we seek to live in light of it.

    06:02-06:07

I pray your Holy Spirit would preach a much better sermon in our hearts than I possibly could with my mouth.

    06:08-06:12

Lord, may you be with my mouth and give me the words to say.

    06:13-06:16

And may you give everyone in this room the ears to hear.

    06:16-06:19

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

    06:20-06:21

All right, so how to watch your mouth.

    06:22-06:26

Number one, recognize its controlling influence.

    06:26-06:30

    Recognize its controlling influence.

    06:32-06:38

So James kicks off the longest teaching about the tongue of the New Testament in a very surprising way.

    06:39-06:51

Verse one, he has this to say, "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, "for you know that we who teach "will be judged with greater strictness." He really comes out the gate swinging, doesn't he?

    06:52-07:00

James has an extremely high view of scripture and the task of teaching other people about scripture.

    07:01-07:12

When a man stands behind a pulpit, he is called to declare what God has definitively said instead of sharing his own flawed and subjective opinions.

    07:13-07:15

He is not called to entertain.

    07:15-07:19

He is not called to innovate and bring his new ideas and interpretations.

    07:19-07:25

He's not called to use the text as a springboard to talk about what he really wants to talk about.

    07:25-07:33

He is called to faithfully read the text, explain the text, illustrate the text, and apply the text.

    07:33-07:34

    That's it.

    07:35-07:40

This is why I agonize and pray over every single word as I prepare.

    07:40-07:47

I go over and edit these sermons a lot because I wanna make sure that what I'm saying is accurate and honoring to the Lord.

    07:48-07:55

I know the same is true for Pastor Jeff and every other man who preaches here, because we believe what James says here is true.

    07:56-08:08

We believe that we will be judged with a greater strictness, which means that we will have to give an account someday for every single word that came out of our mouths we stood before you.

    08:10-08:13

And some of you are thinking, "Phew, I'm glad I'm not a preacher.

    08:13-08:18

"Don't have to worry about that." Well, do you teach back at Harvest Academy?

    08:20-08:21

Do you teach your own kids?

    08:22-08:23

Do you lead a small group?

    08:24-08:26

Do you teach some other kind of class here at Harvest?

    08:28-08:32

If that's true of you, then this verse has something to say to you as well.

    08:32-08:43

James wants every single teacher or preacher of the word to approach the sharing of the word with an air of responsibility and reverence.

    08:44-08:48

This is not a task that should be rushed into quickly or treated flippantly.

    08:49-09:00

Teaching the word of God is by far the most important thing you could use your mouth to communicate, prepare and present like you believe that.

    09:01-09:06

You must recognize that your teaching has an influence and an effect.

    09:08-09:17

And the question is, does my teaching have a godly influence and effect, or does my teaching have a worldly influence and effect?

    09:17-09:26

Am I painting an accurate picture of God and his word, or am I painting a completely inaccurate picture of God and his word?

    09:28-09:33

And James continues to discuss the influence of the tongue in our lives in verse two.

    09:33-09:50

He writes, "For we all stumble in many ways, "and if anyone does not stumble in what he says, "He is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body." So James calls out a reality that we cannot avoid.

    09:51-09:57

We all stumble and sin multiple times a day in multiple ways.

    09:58-10:01

None of us are flawless and perfect.

    10:02-10:08

How you stumble may be different than how I stumble, but these things are sins nonetheless.

    10:08-10:30

But then James seems to contradict himself and make an exception when he says, "And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, also able to bridle his own body." So, you must be a perfect person without any and all sin if you never ever stumble or mess up with what you say.

    10:31-10:34

Who wants to raise their hand and claim that this verse is describing them?

    10:36-10:38

    Where's Mr. and Mrs. Perfect?

    10:39-10:40

    Really, nobody?

    10:41-10:41

None of you, are you sure?

    10:43-10:46

Well, that's really the point that James is making here.

    10:47-10:57

This verse describes none of us, because we all stumble in this area without exception, which we have all admitted by not raising our hands.

    10:59-11:07

And James uses two common illustrations to help us understand the powerful influence of our tongue in verses three through five.

    11:08-11:14

If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.

    11:14-11:15

    Look at the ships also.

    11:16-11:23

Though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder, wherever the will of the pilot directs.

    11:23-11:29

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

    11:30-11:35

So our tongues are like the bit of a horse's bridle and a ship's rudder.

    11:36-11:43

Both are very small things that control the direction and destination of very large things.

    11:44-11:46

I actually have a picture of a bit and bridle for you.

    11:47-11:56

A bit is placed in the mouth of the horse to control their head movement and in turn control where they go.

    11:58-12:05

And many modern cruise ships still utilize rudders to steer and to maintain course.

    12:05-12:06

And I actually have a picture of a giant.

    12:06-12:09

That's how big a cruise ship rudder is.

    12:10-12:18

That may seem big to us, but if you zoomed out, you would see that it's really small in comparison to the rest of the ship.

    12:19-12:26

You know, cruise ships, we've all, maybe you've been on a cruise before with multiple restaurants, huge decks, and multiple activities.

    12:27-12:36

You hold thousands of people, but if this rudder isn't steering you in the right direction, you will not go to the islands that you paid to see.

    12:37-12:48

So James says that our tongue is very small in comparison to the rest of our body, but like a small bit or rudder, it can accomplish big things for good or for bad.

    12:49-12:54

The same bit and bridle that can lead a horse on the right trail can also lead you right off a cliff.

    12:55-13:00

The same rudder that steers you to Aruba can also crash you right into a coral reef.

    13:01-13:14

Your tongue can lead you to blessing or to ruin, to victory or to defeat, to a close-knit community, or to self-inflicted isolation.

    13:15-13:23

Your words reveal the direction of where you were heading and can even give people a sneak peek of your eternal destination.

    13:25-13:32

So based on how you've been speaking over the past few weeks, where are you heading in life?

    13:33-13:36

What do your words say about you?

    13:37-13:38

    Are you on track?

    13:39-13:43

Are you traveling down the path that God has laid out for you in his word?

    13:43-13:47

Or are you totally off the path and going your own way?

    13:48-13:52

I encourage every single one of you to do some self-reflection today.

    13:53-13:57

Evaluate the content and tone of your speech.

    13:58-14:06

Invite your spouse, your kids, and your friends into this conversation because they can point out the blind spots that you cannot see.

    14:08-14:15

Don't just assume that you're doing great in this area of life because you could be failing and stumbling without even realizing it.

    14:16-14:21

You could be unintentionally drifting off course and riding in the wrong direction.

    14:21-14:28

And if that's you, I don't want you to remain clueless any longer of the controlling influence of your tongue.

    14:28-14:34

I want you to recognize its importance and do something to change your direction.

    14:36-14:41

So how to watch your mouth, number two, refuse to underestimate its destructive power.

    14:42-14:45

Refuse to underestimate its destructive power.

    14:47-14:56

So not only does the tongue have the ability to influence, but it also has the power to destroy, to wound, to wear down, and to tear down.

    14:57-15:02

Every single one of us has a deadly weapon in our mouths.

    15:04-15:14

One pastor I read this week has this to say, "No wonder God put the tongue in a cage behind the teeth, "walled in by the mouth." Could be a dangerous animal.

    15:17-15:24

In verses five through eight, James unpacks three different reasons for why the tongue can be so devastating and destruction.

    15:24-15:28

You have A, B, and C on your outline for those three things.

    15:28-15:32

Letter A, it can spread corruption easily and quickly.

    15:33-15:38

It can spread corruption easily and quickly.

    15:42-15:44

Let's read verses five through six.

    15:45-15:48

How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire.

    15:48-15:52

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

    15:53-16:02

The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life.

    16:04-16:05

James is the master of the metaphor.

    16:06-16:12

And he broke every single rule we learned in English class growing up by constantly switching up his metaphors.

    16:12-16:21

So first our tongue is a rudder, it's a bit, and now it's a small fire that can engulf an entire forest.

    16:23-16:31

You know, this comparison should really hit us in 2023 because we are constantly bombarded with images of wildfires on the news.

    16:32-16:49

And I read this past week that up to 90% of wildfires are triggered by acts of human carelessness, acts of human carelessness, such as flicking a lit cigarette into the woods or leaving a campfire unattended.

    16:50-16:58

A small act of carelessness can cause acres and acres and acres of damage and even lead to the loss of human life.

    16:59-17:12

In a similar way, small acts of carelessness with your tongue can cause an exhaustive amount of damage to your family, to your friends, to your church, and to yourself.

    17:14-17:29

James says that your fiery tongue is a world of unrighteousness, which means that there is no ceiling to the heights of wickedness that it can climb to, and there are no limits to the wreckage it can leave in its wake.

    17:32-17:37

James says the tongue is set among our members, staining, defiling the whole body.

    17:39-17:51

You know, whenever you're around a campfire, whenever you're around someone who's smoking a cigarette, you get that same smoky smell stuck in your hair, stuck in your clothes, and stuck in your nostrils.

    17:51-17:53

That happened to anybody else besides me.

    17:54-18:00

You can only get it away by washing your clothes, by washing your face, by washing your hair.

    18:02-18:06

Your words can leave a similar stench on you and others as well.

    18:07-18:17

Your destructive words have a corrupting power that hang over you like a cloud and can tarnish and ruin your witness and example.

    18:19-18:26

Nobody wants to be around that person who only has negative things to say about everybody and everything.

    18:27-18:39

Nobody is rushing to be close friends with that lady who constantly bashes people behind their backs because you know that when your back is turned, She's gonna be saying similar things about you.

    18:41-18:47

Nobody wants to hang out with that guy who is bitingly sarcastic and picks apart people with his words.

    18:49-18:59

That wicked stench can repel people and make them not wanna be around you because they don't wanna get that wicked stench on themselves as well.

    19:02-19:08

In verse six, we are told that our tongues can set fire to the entire course of life.

    19:10-19:13

Other way to translate that in the original Greek is the circle of life.

    19:14-19:17

And no, James isn't busting out into the famous Lion King song.

    19:18-19:22

He is simply referring to our circle or sphere of influence.

    19:22-19:29

You have to understand that your words don't just affect you, they affect every single person around you.

    19:30-19:35

You can spark a massive conflict or controversy with just one sentence.

    19:36-19:39

You have the power to shatter someone into a million pieces.

    19:41-19:47

You can say something in a few seconds that haunts someone for the rest of their lives.

    19:48-19:55

Every single one of us in this room can pull up something that someone has said to us that we will never, ever forget.

    19:58-20:00

Why else can the tongue be so destructive?

    20:00-20:01

    Let her be.

    20:01-20:03

It can be a weapon in the hands of Satan.

    20:05-20:08

It can be a weapon in the hands of Satan.

    20:11-20:14

You may be thinking at this point, well, Taylor, people are just way too soft.

    20:14-20:19

Whatever happened to sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

    20:19-20:23

Why can a few sounds from my mouth cause so much damage?

    20:23-20:24

    What's the big deal?

    20:26-20:48

Well, James makes it crystal clear This is a big deal, at the end of verse six, when he says, "The tongue is set on fire by hell." Your tongue can be a tool of instrument and healing in the hands of God, or it can be an instrument of death in the hands of Satan.

    20:50-20:53

Jesus has this to say about Satan in John 8, 44.

    20:53-20:59

"He was a murderer from the beginning "and does not stand in the truth "because there is no truth in him.

    21:00-21:15

"When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, "for he is a liar and the father of lies." Satan sits back with a giant bowl of popcorn and is so entertained when you choose to hurt people with your words.

    21:16-21:24

He gets a massive kick out of you twisting the truth because he is the father of lies.

    21:25-21:33

If you're a Christian, there is nothing that Satan can do to unsave you or wrench you out of God's tight grip.

    21:33-21:43

But he can lay temptations before you with the intention of getting your eyes off of God, off of who he wants you to be, and off of what he has called you to do.

    21:45-21:48

Your God has a plan and a purpose for your life.

    21:49-21:50

    But guess what?

    21:50-21:53

Your enemy has a plan and a purpose for your life as well.

    21:55-21:59

Satan wants you to be as ineffective for the gospel as possible.

    22:00-22:09

He wants you to become a miserable, bitter, oblivious, and self-focused Christian who makes no impact for the kingdom of God.

    22:11-22:16

I have to say, our enemy is doing a fantastic job of accomplishing this mission, isn't he?

    22:17-22:30

Look at the church landscape and bear witness to how many professing Christians are following the game plan of the enemy they claim to hate, rather than the ways of the God they claim to love.

    22:31-22:38

The way that people in the church world can speak to and about one another is despicable, and it's disheartening.

    22:39-22:56

The church should be a place of unity and not infighting, a place of friendly fellowship and not friendly fire, a place where we follow the lead and prompting of the Spirit, not the lead of our enemy.

    22:59-23:05

Let us not give our enemy any more ammunition in his battle against human souls.

    23:08-23:15

An essential aspect of training someone in firearm safety is the constant reinforcing of the deadly capabilities of a gun.

    23:17-23:27

In the same way, as a follower of Christ, an essential aspect of our training is the constant reinforcing of the deadly capabilities of our tongue.

    23:29-23:30

So why is the tongue so destructive?

    23:31-23:34

Letter C, it is impossible to fully tame.

    23:35-23:38

It is impossible to fully tame.

    23:41-23:44

Let's continue on with verses 7 through 8.

    23:44-23:54

For every kind of beast and bird and reptile and sea creature can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue.

    23:55-23:59

It is a restless evil full of deadly poison.

    24:00-24:04

You know, it's truly amazing to see what animals can be trained to do.

    24:05-24:15

If you jump on YouTube, you can find videos of elephants painting beautiful pictures, Monkeys doing sign language and playing video games.

    24:15-24:20

Did you know that in Sweden, they are training crows to pick up litter off the road?

    24:21-24:26

They've even been trained to pick up cigarette butts and put them in special waste bins.

    24:28-24:30

Everyone's worried about AI replacing their jobs.

    24:30-24:32

I guess we have to worry about birds now too.

    24:34-24:41

Some dogs are trained from birth to help the blind find their way around or sniff out explosives, counterfeit money and drugs.

    24:42-24:45

And then there's my dog, Murdoch.

    24:46-24:50

I love Murdoch, he means well, he's great with my kids, but he's a doofus.

    24:51-24:54

Since he was born, he's been super hyper and age has not changed that.

    24:55-24:59

He's almost seven years old, he's showing no signs of slowing down.

    25:00-25:05

He's getting a little bit white around the face, but his behavior's not changing at all.

    25:05-25:08

And the real kicker is we tried to train him, didn't we Kate?

    25:09-25:18

We took him to a training class graduated. I have some pictures to prove it. He has a diploma. He has a cap. I didn't give him a gown.

    25:20-25:39

He didn't seem very excited, did he, to get this training certificate. We have this certificate on file that tells us that Murdoch is a trained dog. That tells us that he doesn't ignore trained commands. That tells us that he will listen to us no matter what.

    25:41-25:44

But his behavior tells me something much different.

    25:46-25:54

We'd all like to believe that our tongues are expertly trained, like those painting elephants, or those Swedish crows that tidy up the road.

    25:56-26:03

But if we're honest, our tongues are more like Murdoch most of the time, lacking in proper training and running wild.

    26:05-26:11

According to James, the tongue is impossible for us to fully bridle, control, and tame.

    26:11-26:16

He says that it is a restless evil full of deadly poison.

    26:17-26:23

He just keeps piling on the negative descriptors for what our mouths are capable of.

    26:25-26:27

At this point in the sermon, you may be a bit exhausted.

    26:28-26:31

Maybe feeling a bit hopeless and helpless.

    26:32-26:39

Maybe thinking, okay, Taylor, you're telling me to watch my mouth, but you're also telling me that I can never fully watch my mouth.

    26:39-26:40

    What should I do?

    26:40-26:42

    What hope do I have?

    26:44-26:48

Well, earlier on I said that no one is perfect in how they speak.

    26:49-26:50

    And that's true.

    26:50-26:56

There is no mere human being who has ever or will ever fully tame the tongue.

    26:59-27:04

But there is one person who has done this perfectly, the Lord Jesus Christ.

    27:06-27:09

During his time on this earth, he always respected his parents.

    27:10-27:12

He never talked back to them.

    27:14-27:18

He never once told a lie to avoid an awkward situation or impress others.

    27:18-27:22

He never tore apart someone's reputation or slandered them.

    27:24-27:28

He never made fun of a disciple behind his back to the other disciples.

    27:30-27:38

Jesus only preached the truth at all times, and he never once had to make a public or a public retraction for something that he said.

    27:39-27:44

Yes, he spoke hard truths, but he did so with righteousness and purity.

    27:46-27:56

This perfect son of God did the unthinkable by suffering and dying in our place and on our behalf.

    27:57-28:04

We are told in scripture that on the cross, he not only took our sin upon himself, but he actually became our sin.

    28:05-28:12

He became our lying, our gossiping, our complaining, our harsh words, our false promises.

    28:12-28:16

He became all of these things for us.

    28:18-28:27

And if you have trusted in Christ alone for salvation, he has fully paid the price for all of your many failures and faults.

    28:29-28:46

And in return, his perfect righteousness has been given to you, has been accredited to your account before the Father, which means that you are now treated as if you never once failed or stumbled in your speech.

    28:47-28:51

You are now treated as if you perfectly spoke as Jesus spoke.

    28:51-28:53

    Praise the Lord.

    28:55-29:05

It is in light of this amazing truth that we seek to watch what we say is in light of this awesome truth that we seek to tame the tongue.

    29:07-29:14

We don't seek to tame the tongue in our own strength with the desperate long shot that God will love and accept us.

    29:15-29:25

We seek to tame the tongue in the power of the Holy Spirit with the confident assurance that we are already loved and accepted in Christ.

    29:27-29:32

We must look to Jesus as our perfect substitute and Savior.

    29:34-29:39

But we should also look to Him as our perfect example and follow in His footsteps.

    29:40-29:42

I wanna give you some homework today.

    29:43-29:47

I want you to go home this week and read one of the Gospels.

    29:48-29:49

    Matthew, Mark, Luke, John.

    29:50-29:54

And I want you to zero in on how Jesus speaks.

    29:55-29:59

I want you to zero in how he uses his words.

    30:01-30:02

    And imitate that.

    30:04-30:13

And slowly but surely over time, you'll see and others will see that you look and speak a lot more like him.

    30:16-30:17

    How to watch your mouth.

    30:18-30:22

Finally, resolve to only use it for blessing.

    30:25-30:27

resolved to only use it for blessing.

    30:31-30:39

In verse 9, James gives a convicting example of how the tongue can be restlessly evil and full of deadly poison.

    30:39-30:40

    He writes this.

    30:41-31:00

"With it, we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God." So James is saying that many have a forked tongue, And they try to use it for two contradictory purposes-- for blessing and for cursing.

    31:01-31:10

You use your mouth to say how much you love God, but then you use that same mouth to tear down other people and show them hatred.

    31:12-31:24

You come to church, you sing all the songs, you say amen in all the right spots, but on the way home, you passionately cuss someone out who has not fallen the rules of the road as you would.

    31:26-31:42

You wake up tomorrow morning, you have your devotions, you pray passionately to the Lord, and then a few moments later you walk downstairs and you intentionally condescend your spouse and put them down to make them feel bad.

    31:44-31:54

You rock out to worship music during your commute, but at work during a meeting, you intentionally to belittle and embarrass a guy on your team in front of all your colleagues.

    31:56-32:01

According to James, this type of behavior and lifestyle is delusional and hypocritical.

    32:04-32:08

Imagine that you were extremely sweet, complimentary, and pleasant with me as one of your pastors.

    32:09-32:11

You always have a kind word to say to me.

    32:12-32:14

You even send me nice notes on occasion.

    32:15-32:22

But it comes to my attention that at church, whenever I'm not around, you are unbelievably rude to my kids.

    32:23-32:26

You lose it on them in the hallway as they're running down the hallway.

    32:26-32:30

You even give them mean nicknames and make fun of some of their physical features.

    32:32-32:36

Let me ask you an obvious question with an equally obvious answer.

    32:36-32:40

If I find out about this, are we gonna have a great relationship?

    32:41-32:43

There's no chance of that, right?

    32:44-32:47

You can't treat my kids that way expect to be buddy-buddy with me.

    32:48-32:55

You can't be on bad terms with my kids and be on good terms with me, because they are an extension of me.

    32:56-33:00

Sam and Emmy were made in the image and likeness of my wife and I.

    33:01-33:06

If you disrespect them, that shows that you don't truly respect me.

    33:07-33:18

In a much greater way, how can we bless the Lord with our mouths and then use that same mouth to hurt and to harm those made in his image and likeness.

    33:19-33:25

When you disrespect someone with your words, you are ultimately disrespecting their creator.

    33:26-33:33

And on the other hand, when you bless others with your words you are ultimately blessing the God who made them.

    33:35-33:40

I can tell a lot about you based on how you speak to everyone around you.

    33:43-33:51

And James continues on in verses 10 through 12 to explain why this dual purpose of the tongue does not work or make sense.

    33:52-33:54

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing.

    33:55-33:58

My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

    33:58-34:03

Does a spring pour forth from the same opening, both fresh and salt water?

    34:03-34:07

Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives or grapevines produce figs?

    34:07-34:11

Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water.

    34:13-34:18

James says, my brothers, these things ought not to be so.

    34:19-34:26

Ought not in the original Greek is a very strong negative statement that's only used once in the entire New Testament, and that's here.

    34:27-34:37

James is making it crystal clear that this kind of hypocrisy should have no place in the life of the church or in the life of a believer.

    34:38-34:41

And he closes with using two more metaphors for our mouths.

    34:42-34:45

Our mouths are like springs and our mouths are like trees.

    34:47-34:49

I'm not a big nature guy, but maybe you could help me with this.

    34:49-34:57

Have you ever come across a spring out in the woods or on your wilderness wanderings that pours forth both fresh water and salt water?

    34:58-34:59

    No, because that's impossible.

    35:00-35:06

Whenever you go to Sorghum's, do you angrily kick an apple tree produce cherries?

    35:07-35:08

    Why not?

    35:09-35:11

Because apple trees cannot produce cherries.

    35:11-35:13

    They can only produce apples.

    35:14-35:19

As James says, a fig tree cannot produce olives, and a grapevine cannot produce figs.

    35:21-35:28

The same way a transformed heart should not be bearing the rotten fruit of evil speech that harms and hurts others.

    35:29-35:35

Instead, it should only be bearing the right fruit of words that bless and help others.

    35:38-35:43

And Jesus speaks this in Matthew 12, verses 33 through 34, which Jeff talked about a few weeks ago.

    35:43-35:51

Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known for its fruits.

    35:52-35:56

You brood of vipers, how can you speak good when you are evil?

    35:57-36:02

For out of the abundance, out of the overflow of the heart, The mouth speaks.

    36:04-36:06

You cannot have a forked tongue.

    36:07-36:12

You cannot straddle the fence and have one foot in worldliness and the other in holiness.

    36:13-36:16

That is not how your tongue or your heart works.

    36:16-36:17

You have to pick a lane.

    36:18-36:22

Will you pick blessing or will you pick cursing?

    36:22-36:29

Will you pick love for God and love for people or will you pick hatred for God and hatred for people?

    36:31-36:37

As we close, I want to share a verse with you that I revisit often, and I want you to commit to memory.

    36:38-36:59

Ephesians 4.29, "Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear." This is the biblical filter that you should run every thought through before you say something.

    37:00-37:06

I want you to ask yourself three questions based on this verse before you ever let a word exit your mouth.

    37:07-37:07

    Three questions.

    37:08-37:11

Number one, is what I'm saying corrupting?

    37:13-37:15

Is what I'm about to say corrupting?

    37:16-37:19

Is it obscene? Is it crude? Is it unbiblical?

    37:19-37:21

    will this dishonor God?

    37:23-37:26

And if you're unsure, take the safe route and don't say it.

    37:28-37:32

Number two, will this build up the person that I'm talking to?

    37:33-37:37

Will this build up the person that I'm talking to?

    37:38-37:39

    Will this bless them?

    37:39-37:41

    Will this help them?

    37:41-37:43

Will this point them to the grace of God?

    37:44-37:47

Or will it hurt them and point them away from Him?

    37:49-37:52

And the third question, every husband have your pen ready.

    37:52-37:53

    Write this down.

    37:54-37:56

Is this the right time to say it?

    37:57-37:59

And all the wives in the room said amen.

    38:00-38:02

Is this the right time to say it?

    38:02-38:07

Sometimes you can say the right thing at the completely wrong time.

    38:08-38:11

Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing.

    38:13-38:20

Be sensitive to the person's need in that moment and consider what they need to hear and what they don't need to hear.

    38:22-38:26

Make sure that your words fit every single occasion that you find yourself in.

    38:27-38:39

Choose to be a person who speaks blessing to and over those made in the image of God, which covers every single person that you come into contact with without exception.

    38:42-38:44

You know, James is a book of action.

    38:45-38:51

James didn't write these verses to give us an interesting lesson on the tongue.

    38:51-39:00

He wrote these verses under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit so you will seek to watch your mouth on a moment by moment basis.

    39:01-39:06

He wants you to truly understand how much is at stake when you open your mouth.

    39:07-39:13

He wants you to recognize it's controlling influence over you and others.

    39:13-39:17

He wants you to refuse to underestimate its destructive power.

    39:18-39:23

And he wants you to resolve to only use it for blessing and not for cursing.

    39:25-39:30

Maybe you've come to the realization this morning that you don't truly know and love Christ.

    39:31-39:34

And this reality is made very clear by how you speak.

    39:36-39:42

If that's you this morning, I implore you to place your faith in Christ alone for salvation.

    39:43-39:51

And then and only then will you be transformed from the inside out, and your mouth will be given the ability to be used for good.

    39:53-40:00

And for the rest of us, we only take a few moments to do some personal inventory and bring our speech to the Lord.

    40:02-40:07

As our team makes their way forward, our worship team, please bow your heads and close your eyes.

    40:10-40:18

Spend some time with the Lord and ask for his help so you can obey and apply the verses we just read.

    40:19-40:29

Pray that he would clear your heart of specific idols and sins that have a vice grip on your heart and are pouring out of your mouth.

    40:30-40:39

Lust, anger, bitterness, distrust, impatience, pride, or fill in the blank with whatever you're wrestling with.

    40:40-40:48

Push aside all distractions and focus on the changes that the Lord is calling you to make.

    40:54-41:05

Holy Father, we come before you in our undone because we are a people of unclean lips and we live among a people of unclean lips.

    41:06-41:10

And Lord, we have seen your glory this morning in your word.

    41:11-41:20

And we realize, Lord, how we have sinned against you today, this week, or the course of this past month.

    41:21-41:25

And we come before you and we thank you for the mercies of your son.

    41:26-41:32

We thank you that he showed his love for us on the cross, coming to die in our place.

    41:33-41:41

to take all of our sinful words upon Himself and becoming our sinful words and paying the penalty for all of our sin.

    41:43-41:48

Lord, in light of that truth, Lord, help us to use our mouths for You and Your glory.

    41:50-41:59

I pray that we wouldn't use our mouths to make ourselves feel better, to impress others, Lord, to hurt others, to elevate ourselves.

    42:00-42:05

May we use our mouths to speak the truth of Christ and show others Christ.

    42:07-42:15

Lord, I don't want this message to just stay here in the building this morning or to stay in the parking lot for that it would stay with us the rest of this week.

    42:17-42:19

And your Holy Spirit would do the work that only he can.

    42:21-42:25

That he would challenge us, he would convict us that he would change us.

    42:27-42:28

Lord, we thank you for your goodness.

    42:29-42:30

We thank you for your mercy.

    42:30-42:35

And may we now use our mouths to sing to you with a heart that is full of love.

    42:36-42:38

In the name of Jesus, amen.

Intentional Faith: A "How To" Guide - How to Prove You Have Faith

Introduction:

Matthew 7:21 - Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

Romans 2:6-8 - He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

How to Prove You Have Faith (James 2:14-26)

  1. A faith that doesn't Move you to Serve = dead faith. (Jas 2:15-17)
  2. A faith that is just about Agreeing to Doctrine = dead faith. (Jas 2:18-19)

John 3:2 - This man (Nicodemus) came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."

  3. A faith that Makes your Choices = living faith. (Jas 1:20-26)

Open up your Bibles with me please to James in chapter 2. Let's just pause and I'm gonna ask you please, please pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's Word and I will pray for you to have a heart open to receiving God's Word. You should approach every message up here as the most important message ever given, because it's all God's Word. And I guess some weeks you feel that weight a little heavier than others, and this is one of those weeks. So I'm just going to ask I'm just pleased that we just pause for a moment and go before the Lord and be ready to receive what he wants to tell us.

    01:41-01:42

    All right?

    01:43-01:44

So pray for me, I'll pray for you.

    01:49-02:00

Father, just a moment ago, we sang, "There's No One Like You." And that also means there's nothing like your word You speak.

    02:03-02:04

    It matters.

    02:08-02:17

Every word you say, we have to regard as coming from the mouth of an eternal God.

    02:19-02:21

We need to take it with that level of seriousness.

    02:21-02:51

Father, let us hear what you have to say in your Word today. We pray in Jesus' name. All of God's people said, "Amen." James chapter 2, we're gonna be picking up in verse 14. While you're still turning there, the first pet that I ever had was was a hermit crab.

    02:52-02:55

How many people, show of hands, have ever had a hermit crab?

    02:56-02:58

Way more than I was expecting.

    02:58-03:00

Some of you put your hands up very proudly.

    03:01-03:04

I saw some of you like, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that.

    03:04-03:15

Well, if you, like me, if you had a hermit crab, you could testify that they are as fun as they are adorable, right?

    03:16-03:18

Didn't get a lot of amens on that one, Dan.

    03:20-03:22

    But hermit crabs are great.

    03:22-03:31

You know, we had the little plastic, you know, like bin for them with the sand and the shells, and you put the peanut butter in.

    03:31-03:32

Did you feed yours peanut butter?

    03:32-03:33

    We gave ours peanut butter.

    03:34-03:37

And they were just, I don't know.

    03:37-03:40

    I can't remember what mine's name was.

    03:40-03:44

Probably something stupid like crabby or whatever, shelly.

    03:47-03:51

but which is a bad name for a crab, but great for a person, bad for a crab.

    03:52-03:57

But just to make that clear, but you know the worst part about having a hermit crab?

    03:57-04:00

Those of you that has your hand up, you know.

    04:01-04:12

You know the worst part about having a hermit crab was when they died, you didn't know it just by looking at it.

    04:13-04:16

You see, when they died, they looked exactly like that.

    04:16-04:26

And there'll be times I've walked by for days, oh, well, you know, crabby's just out, you know, hanging out, but you didn't know they were dead until what?

    04:26-04:29

You go to pick them up and play with them and then what happened?

    04:30-04:35

Plop, they would just like plop out of their shell and you saw all that stuff that was inside.

    04:35-04:37

Oh, it was, do you remember what I'm talking about?

    04:38-04:39

    Some of you are connecting.

    04:40-04:52

Others of you need to go buy a hermit crab this afternoon just to experience the slight shock, more grossness that comes when they just plop out of their shell when they're dead.

    04:53-05:01

You see, they had this way of looking alive when actually they were dead.

    05:02-05:07

And we're in this series right now called intentional faith.

    05:08-05:18

And I'm gonna ask you, don't you wanna know If the faith that you claim to have is alive, or is it dead?

    05:21-05:36

Biblically, it's possible that you live your life thinking that you have this living and saving faith, and you don't.

    05:38-05:39

    Look at verse 14.

    05:41-05:51

James says, "What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith, but does not have works?

    05:54-06:03

Can that faith save him?" So James introduces this next section by hitting us right between the eyes.

    06:04-06:30

If you say that you have faith, but there's nothing in your life that indicates that beyond your words, James says, "What good is that?" Is that true saving faith?

    06:31-06:33

And listen, you have to understand this.

    06:33-06:38

There is a type of faith that does not save, right?

    06:38-06:41

We're gonna see this verse 17, verse 20, verse 26.

    06:41-06:52

He says, "It's faith that is dead." And then he says, "It's useless." And then again, he says, "It's dead." This is how our Lord said it back in Matthew 7, 21.

    06:52-07:17

"Not everyone who says to me, "Lord, Lord will enter the kingdom of heaven, "but the one who," look at this, "does the will of my father, "who is in heaven?" And Jesus went on to say, people are gonna say to him on that day, "Lord, Lord, didn't we do all these things?" And I'll say, "Depart from me, I never knew you." But you have to see that Jesus and James saying the same thing, it's not about being a sayer.

    07:18-07:20

Standing up, I have faith, I have faith, I have faith.

    07:20-07:22

It doesn't matter what you say.

    07:28-07:28

    Matters what you do.

    07:30-07:45

We talked about this a couple of weeks back, I believe, but we are actually judged according to our works because our works reveal who we really are, not who we say we are, right?

    07:47-07:52

Romans 2, if you need a good cross-reference verse, judged according to works.

    07:53-07:53

    What, what?

    07:53-07:55

Look at what the Bible says.

    07:55-07:58

He will render to each one, what's it say?

    07:58-07:59

    according to his works.

    08:00-08:08

To those who by patience and well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life.

    08:08-08:19

But for those who are self-seeking and do not, oh, there it is again, obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

    08:23-08:28

So we see in verse 14 here in James chapter two, he's talking about the importance of works.

    08:29-08:30

What do we mean by works?

    08:30-08:36

I think we gotta get a good definition on the table because some people might wanna take works to mean anything.

    08:37-08:46

But biblically, when the Bible talks about works, it's fruit that manifests in the life of a born again Christ follower.

    08:48-08:50

It's obeying the word of God.

    08:51-08:56

It's just very simply, it's doing the things that God calls his people to do.

    08:57-08:58

    That's works.

    09:00-09:00

    Right?

    09:01-09:02

Like what are some examples of works?

    09:03-09:05

Well, I'm gonna write a few down here.

    09:07-09:08

    Here's a big one.

    09:09-09:19

Something that is repent, bear fruit in keeping with repentance, right?

    09:20-09:24

And then, you know, Harvest Bible Chapel, we talk about what does a disciple do?

    09:24-09:36

we believe a disciple of Jesus Christ worships, walks, and works, right?

    09:37-09:45

Works, being involved in ministry, whether it's working in kids ministry, worship ministry, hospitality, facilities, security, whatever.

    09:47-09:54

Here's another work we've talked about last month quite a bit is your witnessing.

    09:54-09:57

That's a work, that's something that God has called you to do.

    09:57-09:58

    It's an act of obedience.

    09:58-10:01

It's something that should show up in the life of every believer.

    10:02-10:02

    Here's another one.

    10:05-10:14

You know, Jesus said, "Where your treasure is there, your heart will be also." So we could say one work would be how you spend God's money.

    10:14-10:15

    It's all God's.

    10:15-10:17

What do you do with God's money?

    10:18-10:22

Jesus said, "That's an indicator of where your heart is." Right?

    10:24-10:34

So as soon as we talk about works, as is our custom, we like to jump to either side of the spectrum, right?

    10:35-10:42

And there are some people that are like, "Yes, if you don't do these things, you can't get saved." And they wanna make this like work salvation.

    10:42-10:43

    And that's not true.

    10:44-10:48

Works do not save you, right?

    10:48-10:57

But then you get to, I think, more of the opinion that you would find in a church like ours, where works are regarded as completely unimportant.

    10:58-11:00

And I've actually heard people say that in the church.

    11:01-11:02

    Oh, works don't matter.

    11:02-11:03

We're not saved by works, so works don't matter.

    11:04-11:06

And that's not what the Bible says either.

    11:09-11:16

And some people look at what James says, and they almost see it as a contradiction with the apostle Paul.

    11:16-11:20

Like James and Paul are like butting heads here.

    11:20-11:25

James and Paul, they were only butting heads because Paul says you're justified by faith and James says you're justified by work.

    11:25-11:27

So these two are really clashing.

    11:27-11:31

Listen, James and Paul are not head to head clashing here.

    11:32-11:39

Instead of seeing them head to head, what you need to do is see James and Paul back to back, like Charlie's Angels pose, right?

    11:39-11:40

You know what I'm talking about?

    11:40-11:41

    Some of you do.

    11:41-11:46

They're back to back because they're defending the truth.

    11:47-11:53

And you see what Paul was going after was people that wanted salvation by works.

    11:53-11:54

I'll earn my way to heaven.

    11:54-11:56

And Paul's like, eh, that doesn't do it.

    11:57-12:09

And what James is going after are the people that say they want a salvation that doesn't require anything, a salvation that doesn't demand anything.

    12:11-12:21

And the truth is no one is saved by works, but no one is saved without producing works.

    12:22-12:27

And this gets so messed up in the church, so bad.

    12:30-12:34

But you have to think of the relationship of faith and works like this.

    12:41-12:44

I'm gonna draw a little campfire here.

    12:48-12:51

You have to think of the relationship like this, right?

    12:52-12:53

    So you have this fire.

    12:57-13:00

I'm going to put a little orange in the fire here.

    13:00-13:01

I feel like Bob Ross up here, right?

    13:02-13:03

Do I look like Bob Ross?

    13:03-13:04

    Don't answer that.

    13:08-13:08

    All right.

    13:09-13:10

    Yeah, I need more hair.

    13:10-13:10

    All right.

    13:12-13:17

So, this is the relationship with faith and works.

    13:17-13:18

We're gonna see this in James.

    13:20-13:25

You have a fire and you have smoke, right?

    13:25-13:32

Now, you could have all the smoke in the world and not create a fire out of that smoke, right?

    13:34-13:38

But if you have fire, you're always going to have smoke.

    13:39-13:43

And you see, that's the relationship between faith and works.

    13:44-13:49

Faith is like the fire, and the smoke is like the works.

    13:49-14:01

You could do all the works in the world and you're never going to conjure up biblical saving faith, but this is what we're gonna see James is talking about.

    14:01-14:08

If you truly have biblical faith, it always results in works.

    14:08-14:12

It's the smoke that comes from the fire of faith.

    14:13-14:15

    That's the relationship, you see.

    14:17-14:27

It's simply this, how we live proves who we really are, not who we say we are.

    14:29-14:40

And if you wanna push back on that, I would just lovingly challenge you to consider What exactly happens when someone gets saved?

    14:42-14:44

    It's always the same thing.

    14:45-14:47

It's always the same thing, right?

    14:47-14:48

    How does somebody get saved?

    14:48-14:50

    They hear the gospel message.

    14:50-14:56

They hear the message about Jesus Christ, died on the cross for our sins, rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    14:56-15:02

They hear the gospel message, they believe the gospel message, and they turn from their sin.

    15:03-15:06

And what happens when someone genuinely does that?

    15:06-15:07

They become an adopted child of God.

    15:08-15:13

And the Bible says God puts his Holy Spirit in the heart of every believer.

    15:16-15:20

And when that happens, that results in a total transformation.

    15:21-15:27

Your desires change, your appetites change, your purpose change, everything changes.

    15:28-15:34

And you'll never convince me that the God of the universe comes and indwells your heart and you stay the same.

    15:39-15:41

A faith that hasn't changed you hasn't saved you.

    15:42-15:49

And listen, you can be a church goer, you can be a church member, you can be a perfect church attender.

    15:53-16:03

But if you don't have evidence in your life that God indwells you, then he doesn't.

    16:05-16:07

And you don't have biblical faith.

    16:09-16:11

Like, well, what's the evidence that God indwells you?

    16:13-16:15

    It's a true saving faith.

    16:17-16:23

The fire always results in works, the smoke, right?

    16:23-16:26

So let's, that's really the whole sermon.

    16:27-16:29

    Like, woo-hoo, we're done, I'll hang on.

    16:30-16:31

How to prove you have faith.

    16:31-16:35

Write this down, 'cause James doesn't leave us there, so we're not gonna stop there.

    16:36-16:38

James goes on to prove his point.

    16:38-16:39

How to prove you have faith.

    16:39-16:44

Number one, a faith that doesn't move you to serve is a dead faith.

    16:45-16:47

Look at verses 15 and 16.

    16:49-17:06

He says, "If a brother or sister is poorly clothed "and lacking in daily food, And one of you says to them, go in peace, be warmed and filled without giving them the things needed for the body.

    17:08-17:09

    What good is that?

    17:11-17:12

    What good is that?

    17:14-17:16

You see, James is saying when you see a need.

    17:19-17:24

Somebody in the church, he's talking about specifically someone in your church or someone in your small group.

    17:25-17:31

It's like, man, you got, they come to you and they're like, "Man, I'm really struggling right now.

    17:32-17:42

"I am really struggling." And your response is, "Well, good luck with that." You know, that does sound tough.

    17:42-17:45

I really hope something works out for you.

    17:47-17:49

Or the worst, you know what we say, right?

    17:49-17:50

    Thoughts and prayers.

    17:53-17:54

    Sorry.

    17:55-17:57

Thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers.

    18:01-18:05

But you don't do anything to actually help?

    18:08-18:09

    What good is that?

    18:10-18:11

    That's what James is saying.

    18:11-18:13

He goes, that's being a new creature in Christ.

    18:14-18:20

That's God's Holy Spirit living in you as you see somebody in desperate need and you do nothing to help?

    18:21-18:22

You're just like, hey, good luck?

    18:24-18:25

    Look at verse 17.

    18:26-18:45

He says, "So also faith by itself, "if it does not have works is dead." Listen, he says, if you can so easily dismiss a brother or sister in need, he doesn't say your faith is weak.

    18:46-18:48

He doesn't say your faith is immature.

    18:49-18:50

Do you see the word that he uses?

    18:52-18:55

He says, "Your faith is dead.

    18:56-19:02

"It's dead." And you're like, "Well, no, hang on, why, why, why?

    19:02-19:04

"I care, I care." No, you really don't.

    19:06-19:10

Because caring is, hey, let's find a way to fix this, right?

    19:10-19:16

Let's find a way, let's sit down, let's pray, but let's talk and let's figure out a way to fix this problem.

    19:19-19:26

Because when you really have faith, like true biblical faith, you can't help but help.

    19:28-19:30

And I've seen it every time in this church.

    19:31-19:36

When a need shows up here, I see the people that have true faith jumping in.

    19:36-19:39

Let's figure out the best way to help.

    19:40-19:42

And I see people that have dead faith.

    19:42-19:43

It's like, well, good luck with that.

    19:43-19:45

I hope they get that situation figured out.

    19:45-19:46

    James says that's dead faith.

    19:47-19:48

    Maybe it's needs here.

    19:49-19:59

Maybe it's needs with our friends in Thailand, where there's constant needs, 23 churches and four children's homes, and there's always needs there.

    20:00-20:03

We have ministry connections in Nepal.

    20:03-20:08

We've given to help in the past time, especially during the pandemic.

    20:09-20:18

I've been in touch with Pastor Timothy from Nepal, and I don't know if you've been following the news, but right where he does ministry, there was a massive earthquake.

    20:19-20:19

We have some of those pictures.

    20:20-20:20

Can we show some of those?

    20:22-20:33

This is, again, pastor friend of mine, he has a whole network of churches, much like Thailand, and this devastating earthquake hit, and it directly affected two of their church plants.

    20:37-20:41

Eight of their people are seriously injured, okay?

    20:42-20:44

These are people that we are connected with in ministry.

    20:45-20:48

And I'm calling on you to say, "Hey, do you wanna help support this?

    20:49-20:54

Go to our giving page, go in the missions tab, give the general missions.

    20:54-20:58

We're going to be sending them some relief to try to help them this week.

    20:59-21:07

And you can be a part of helping." But you see right now, some people are gonna look at this and they're gonna think, "Oh, that's too bad.

    21:07-21:08

    I hope people step up.

    21:08-21:10

I hope people help." What about you?

    21:13-21:18

Can we just see a desperate need and just close our heart to it?

    21:26-21:27

We have other needs in the church.

    21:27-21:31

We are constantly in need of children's workers and hospitality workers.

    21:31-21:36

And I can't think of a ministry where we don't need more people stepping up.

    21:36-21:43

And there are people that hear the call and say, "Wow, you know what, that ministry, yeah, like children's ministry, that's really important.

    21:43-21:45

I sure hope people step up and help with that.

    21:45-21:46

And I would say, well, what about you?

    21:47-21:56

How can you see a need and you have some ability to meet the need and you just brush it off?

    21:56-21:58

You see, that's what James is saying here.

    21:59-22:07

If you can meet a need and you just brush it off, that says something about your heart.

    22:09-22:10

What it says is your faith is dead.

    22:12-22:19

Right, number two, a faith that is just about agreeing with doctrine is a dead faith.

    22:24-22:25

    Look at verse 18.

    22:26-22:30

He says, "But someone will say, "you have faith and I have works.

    22:31-22:45

"Show me your faith apart from your works "and I will show you my faith by my works." Right, so the guy that's reading this or hearing this, "Hey, you need to pump the brakes there, Pastor Jeff.

    22:45-22:50

"I got faith." James says, "Show me, show me.

    22:52-23:10

"Point to something in your life that says, "'Here's the evidence that my faith is real.' "Point to something in your life right now "that says, 'Here's the evidence.' "Show me choices that you make, "things that you do because of Jesus, "because of what God's word says.

    23:10-23:25

"point to something." If you're like, "Well, you know what, Pastor Jeff, "I believe, I do believe, "there's just not a whole lot to point at in my life." Well, James would say, "Well, then you don't really believe." 'Cause look at verse 19.

    23:25-23:34

He says, "You believe that God is one." We all know people like this.

    23:37-23:38

And maybe you're one of them.

    23:39-23:44

You know, maybe you're trying to share the gospel, someone invites them to church, you're having a spiritual conversation.

    23:45-23:46

    We've all been there.

    23:47-23:51

Where immediately the person says, "Well, I believe in God." You ever heard somebody say that?

    23:51-23:53

"I believe in God." They just hurry up and throw that up.

    23:53-24:01

Like, before you start with all this gospel stuff, I just want you to know, I acknowledge that there is a God.

    24:02-24:02

    I believe in God.

    24:03-24:04

    Look at what James says.

    24:05-24:07

He says, "You believe that God is one?

    24:07-24:12

"You do well." Anybody sense a bit of sarcasm there?

    24:14-24:15

    You get that?

    24:16-24:17

    James is like, "Wow!

    24:19-24:25

You agree with the most basic doctrine of Scripture that there's one God?

    24:26-24:27

    Wow!

    24:28-24:29

    Are you Charles Spurgeon?

    24:31-24:32

    Wow!

    24:33-24:34

    Good for you!

    24:35-24:35

    That's awesome!

    24:36-24:38

    That's awesome, Mr. MacArthur!

    24:38-24:40

You know who else believes that?

    24:41-24:45

Look at verse 19, he says, "Even the demons believe." And shudder.

    24:47-24:52

He goes, "Great theology." Oh, by the way, you know who else has decent theology?

    24:53-24:53

    Our demons.

    24:55-24:55

    Great theology.

    24:57-25:07

In fact, we could probably get a demon to write a doctrinal statement for the church, and it'd probably be pretty accurate.

    25:13-25:15

Except for all the parts where they'd lie.

    25:17-25:19

But James, you see James's point here, right?

    25:21-25:23

James says, oh, you believe that there's one God.

    25:24-25:25

    Good for you.

    25:25-25:37

By the way, that level of theology isn't even on demon level, because demons believe that, and they are shaking in their little demon booties.

    25:39-25:43

They're terrified because they know that there is a God.

    25:44-25:46

And you can just say it flippantly.

    25:49-25:52

You believe the facts, but you have no commitments.

    25:54-25:56

James here is telling us, look, intellectually agreeing.

    25:57-26:01

Intellectually agreeing with facts is not enough.

    26:01-26:03

That's not true biblical saving faith.

    26:03-26:04

    It's not enough.

    26:05-26:08

You want a good case study of this, just very, very quickly.

    26:08-26:11

You don't have to turn here, but just write the reference down.

    26:11-26:12

You can go back and check this later.

    26:13-26:15

But John chapter three, famous passage.

    26:16-26:24

John 3, two says, "This man," talking about Nicodemus, "came to Jesus by night and said to him," now look at what Nicodemus said to Jesus.

    26:24-26:25

    Do we have that scripture?

    26:26-26:49

It says, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." Without breaking this down too much, you have to notice that Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus' teaching.

    26:51-26:53

    He acknowledged Jesus' signs.

    26:54-26:59

And it looked like in a real sense, he was acknowledging the divinity of Jesus Christ.

    27:00-27:07

And I would expect the next verse, Jesus to say, "Wow, that's really good, Nick.

    27:07-27:09

"Hey, you sound like you're saved.

    27:10-27:17

"You sound like a good Christian boy." But if you're familiar with that passage, you know that's not what Jesus said.

    27:19-27:23

Jesus pointed out that it's not enough to just intellectually agree with these things.

    27:23-27:24

    What did Jesus say?

    27:25-27:29

He said, "Nicodemus, you must be changed.

    27:30-27:46

You must be born again." So listen, if your faith is just agreeing with the Bible, but you don't have works, that says something about your heart.

    27:49-27:51

And what it says is your faith is dead.

    27:53-27:56

Then number three, how to prove you have faith.

    27:56-27:57

    Those are two negatives.

    27:58-27:59

    Here's a positive.

    28:00-28:02

Number three, a faith that makes your choices is a living faith.

    28:04-28:06

A faith that makes your choices is a living faith.

    28:06-28:07

    Look at verse 20.

    28:08-28:14

It says, "Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, "that faith apart from works is useless?

    28:18-28:22

"You want proof that works are the evidence of real faith?" Look at verse 21.

    28:23-28:31

He says, "Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?" You know, stop there, Abraham.

    28:31-28:36

Like if you're familiar with the New Testament at all, you know he's the poster boy for faith, right?

    28:37-28:38

He's the father of the Jews.

    28:38-28:43

He's the father of everyone who has true faith in the living God.

    28:44-28:47

And James here takes us back to Genesis chapter 22.

    28:50-28:52

Paraphrase, you can go back and check this later.

    28:52-28:57

The Abe was finally, finally given the son that he was promised.

    28:57-28:59

    He was finally given Isaac.

    29:03-29:06

And God said, "Okay, give him back.

    29:09-29:21

"Sacrifice him." And Abe proved that his faith was real because he was willing to do whatever God said.

    29:22-29:23

    No questions asked.

    29:25-29:26

    Look at verse 22.

    29:28-29:41

He says, "You see that faith was active "along with his works, "and faith was completed by his works." Aba clearly demonstrated that he had faith.

    29:42-29:43

    Like how?

    29:45-29:50

It wasn't just walking around telling everybody that he'll stand still for more than seven seconds.

    29:50-29:54

Hey, by the way, I believe, Hey, by the way, I believe, hey, by the, I believe, I believe in God, I believe in the living God.

    29:55-29:59

He says, Abraham proved it by his works.

    30:01-30:03

Because we see Abraham's faith made his choices.

    30:04-30:09

Because I believe God, I'm going to do what God says I should do.

    30:10-30:12

He's like, that's how we know Abraham had faith, right?

    30:14-30:18

Look at verse 23 and 24, he goes on.

    30:18-30:26

He says in the scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.

    30:27-30:29

And he was called a friend of God.

    30:31-30:37

You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

    30:38-30:42

Here he quotes Genesis 15, six, Abraham believed God.

    30:43-30:47

And James is expounding on that a little bit.

    30:47-30:56

It says, "Yes, Abraham believed God and he acted like it." You see that?

    30:57-31:05

Abraham was counted righteous and he acted like it.

    31:07-31:08

    And I love this.

    31:09-31:13

Do you see at the end of verse 23, Abraham was called a friend of God.

    31:17-31:24

See, a true born again believer, a true person of faith acts like a friend of God.

    31:25-31:28

And I just have to ask you, how's your relationship with God?

    31:33-31:35

What's your relationship with God like?

    31:37-31:44

Is God sort of that other church member that you run into on Sunday occasionally?

    31:47-31:49

Like, God, it was good to see you at Harvest Bible Chapel this morning.

    31:49-31:50

Maybe I'll see you next week.

    31:51-31:54

Is God sort of that like church acquaintance?

    31:54-31:56

    Is God the 911?

    31:57-32:05

Like, yeah, I pray when I'm at the complete end of my rope and I have nothing else to do, I pray.

    32:06-32:07

    Is God your 911?

    32:08-32:17

What if I, what if, what if I were to ask God what the nature of your relationship with him is.

    32:19-32:22

So God, I'm talking about this person here.

    32:22-32:23

    What's your relationship?

    32:23-32:24

    What would God say?

    32:27-32:28

Would God say, yeah, you know what?

    32:28-32:32

He walks around and talks like he knows me, but he never talks to me.

    32:35-32:37

Or would God say, yeah, he's a friend?

    32:38-32:40

Would God say, yeah, she's a friend?

    32:42-32:53

See, that's how Abraham was regarded because of his relationship with God.

    32:54-32:59

And you see James's point here, Abraham was not just willing in a hypothetical scenario.

    32:59-33:03

Like Abraham, he had faith and God set him down one time.

    33:03-33:05

Like, Abraham, how strong is your faith?

    33:05-33:06

Well, my faith is pretty strong, Lord.

    33:07-33:09

Okay, I'm gonna give you a hypothetical.

    33:10-33:19

You know, would you hypothetically, would you, you know, eat a cricket for me?

    33:21-33:22

Oh yes, Lord, I would do that.

    33:23-33:32

Okay, hypothetically, would you, I don't know, sacrifice your son for me?

    33:32-33:37

Oh yeah, hypothetically, God, if you ask me, you see, with Abraham, it wasn't hypothetical.

    33:38-33:41

He actually had his son on the altar.

    33:41-33:43

He had the knife in his hand.

    33:48-33:51

And that's what you have to identify in your life.

    33:51-33:56

Is your faith conceptual or is your faith actual?

    33:59-34:07

Because like Abraham, we'll know if you really have faith by what you'd actually do, not by what you say.

    34:08-34:10

    or think you do.

    34:12-34:34

And you're like, oh, okay, laying it on pretty thick here, Jeff, I'm supposed to compare myself and I'm supposed to compare my faith with Abraham's, you know, like on the Mount Rushmore of the Old Testament, you know, the father of Israel, I'm supposed to compare, that'd be like a guitar player comparing himself with Eddie Van Halen.

    34:34-34:37

I'm supposed to compare myself to that guy.

    34:40-34:44

Okay, if that seems a little heavy for you, let's look at the same principle in somebody not as famous.

    34:44-34:46

    Look at verse 25.

    34:46-35:04

It says, "In the same way, "was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works "when she received the messengers "and sent them out by another way?" So here's a total contrast.

    35:05-35:23

You have Abraham, this faithful Jewish male leader, and you have Rahab the prostitute, terrible nickname, but this evil Gentile woman.

    35:25-35:29

And if you're unfamiliar with her story, Joshua chapter two, I'm gonna paraphrase for you.

    35:30-35:40

"Joshua sent spies to Jericho, "and the king of Jericho found out "that there were Jewish spies in their midst, "and he asked Rahab, 'Where are the spies?'" And she's like, "I don't really know.

    35:40-35:43

"They kind of came through here and they were gone.

    35:43-35:50

"I'm not sure where they went, "but if you hurry, you might catch them, who knows." But she had them hidden on the roof.

    35:54-35:59

And then she goes to them and she explains why she protected them.

    35:59-36:02

She's like, "Hey, your God has a reputation.

    36:05-36:08

"I believe that he's the Lord "and he's going to give you victory.

    36:08-36:13

"Would you please spare me and my family?" And you're like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    36:13-36:15

"This Rahab became a person of faith.

    36:15-36:19

"How do we know that she became this person of faith?" That's James's point.

    36:19-36:21

We know she did because of her works.

    36:23-36:24

    Rahab had one opportunity.

    36:25-36:30

She had exactly one opportunity in her life to demonstrate that she really believed.

    36:32-36:37

And she took that opportunity because she put her life on the line to protect the Israelites.

    36:40-36:42

So you have two very different people.

    36:47-36:49

But James is stressing what they had in common.

    36:51-37:04

Listen to this, your faith is proven by what you do, especially when what you have to do is hard or costly.

    37:05-37:09

That's when we'll know if you really have faith.

    37:17-37:20

Not, do you believe that there's a God?

    37:20-37:21

    Do you go to church?

    37:21-37:23

Do you go to Bible study?

    37:23-37:25

All this, hey, all that is wonderful.

    37:28-37:32

But when it's all on the line, what do you do?

    37:35-37:39

When it's gonna cost you something to follow Jesus Christ, what do you do?

    37:43-37:45

And you see, that's the great thing about trials.

    37:45-37:47

You know, James started this whole epistle with trials.

    37:47-37:49

That's the great thing about trials.

    37:50-38:34

That's the great thing about the Bible calling us to hard things is because that's where your faith is proven. I mean just imagine with me for a second. Imagine that your life was just so cush. Just imagine that every day was the best day of your life. You felt great. You person that you knew just got along perfectly with each other. Oh and everyone that you know is healthy and you always had plenty in the bank, always.

    38:38-38:48

And all God ever asked of you, "Hey if you have time can you just show up at church on Sunday if it's not too inconvenient for you?" That's all God ever asked.

    38:51-39:02

Are you in that scenario? If that was you, how would I know if you really believed?

    39:03-39:29

Or maybe more importantly, how would you know if you really believed? But when When you're called to give sacrificially, when you're called to go on a mission trip, that you're like, I'll be honest with you, I'm really nervous about going, but I'm doing it.

    39:32-39:57

When you're watching your sick kids struggle, when you've lost your job, the bank account's pretty close to zero, and you're still making choices that prove that you trust God, then we'll know that your faith is alive.

    40:00-40:01

    One last illustration.

    40:04-40:15

Verse 26, he says, for as the body apart from the spirit is dead, So also faith apart from works is dead.

    40:17-40:19

His last illustration is a corpse.

    40:19-40:21

    It's a body without a spirit, that's dead.

    40:22-40:28

He says in the same way, faith without works, it's dead.

    40:31-40:39

You know, I was thinking a lot about that illustration because by virtue of my position, I attend a lot more funerals than the average person.

    40:40-40:49

And you know, there's a lot of work that goes into making that body in the casket look good.

    40:50-40:51

There's a lot of work that goes into that.

    40:53-41:05

You get the nice clothes, they dress the person up in nice clothes, and then they do all the makeup, and they have somebody come in, and I know a lady that does this.

    41:05-41:10

She goes in and does the hair of deceased people.

    41:17-41:26

And every funeral I've done, you know, as I'm standing near the casket, I'm talking with people, I'm praying with people, and people come through the line and they look at the body.

    41:27-41:28

They all say the same thing.

    41:29-41:30

You know what it is, right?

    41:31-41:33

"Oh, she looks so good." You know what I'm talking about?

    41:33-41:39

"She looks so good." They put a lot of effort into making that body look good.

    41:40-41:48

And not to rain on anybody's parade, but look, she might look good, but there's no life in there.

    41:53-41:55

    And that's James' point here.

    41:55-41:58

For some people, that's your faith.

    42:00-42:11

You put so much effort into making people think that you look good, but there's no life in there.

    42:16-42:18

This is what James is saying, people.

    42:19-42:21

    Faith works.

    42:23-42:25

    It just does.

    42:26-42:28

You can say that you have faith in God.

    42:29-42:32

You can agree that what God says is good and right.

    42:32-42:34

    You can carry your Bible.

    42:34-42:35

    You can come to church.

    42:35-42:41

And you can even post spiritual things on social media all the live long day.

    42:44-43:03

But if there's no evidence in your life, no fruit to back up your profession of faith, Nothing that I could point to that says, oh, look, he really believes that God said what he said and he meant what he said.

    43:07-43:08

Well, James says your faith is dead.

    43:12-43:24

If you're right now, if you're like, man, I'm feeling a lot of heaviness and conviction about that, man, I got some really good news for you.

    43:25-43:31

If you're sitting here going, man, I think my faith is dead, I got awesome news for you.

    43:32-43:35

Do you know God is in the resurrection business?

    43:36-43:37

    That's what he does.

    43:39-43:40

    That's God's thing.

    43:41-43:43

    He raises the dead.

    43:45-43:51

And I would say, look, if you're sitting here today or you're watching this stream and you're like, maybe my faith is dead.

    43:51-44:03

I'm like, well, let's just be honest with ourselves and let's be honest with God and let's ask him to bring life into a dead faith and then act accordingly.

    44:04-44:08

I ask you to bow your heads with me, please, as our worship team makes their way back up.

    44:14-44:27

And I know we're in a crowded room here, but I just want as much as you can to tune everything out and just focus on God right now.

    44:30-44:47

Father in heaven, we are so blessed in this country to have the freedom to come together like this and sing and pray and talk about your word.

    44:47-45:00

And there's countries right now where we could be arrested and or executed on the spot for doing exactly what we're doing.

    45:02-45:23

Father, I think that as great as the freedom is, the downside is it can attract people that maybe think they have faith because they attend a church service, but there's no evidence in their lives to back it up.

    45:25-45:37

So Father, just now, if there's any of my friends here that are discovering, wow, you know what?

    45:37-45:40

I really don't have biblical faith.

    45:41-45:46

God, I pray right now that they would be honest with you about that.

    45:55-45:57

The Father, they're done putting on a show.

    45:58-46:00

They're done trying to look good.

    46:02-46:17

But like Abraham and like Rahab, They're ready to start acting on what they say they believe.

    46:21-46:25

Father, you know, we're not trying to be a flashy church.

    46:25-46:27

We're not trying to draw attention to ourselves.

    46:27-46:34

We're not trying to put a spotlight on anything or anyone except Jesus Christ.

    46:35-46:37

Father, we just want to be faithful.

    46:40-46:42

And for that to happen, Father, we need a faith that's real.

    46:43-47:00

So I pray that through the conviction that comes from your word, as your Holy Spirit works with your word, that today you've rattled some people awake.

    47:01-47:04

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read James 2:14-26

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What exactly is James talking about when he speaks of “works”? Give specific examples of the kinds of works that flow from authentic faith.

  3. Suppose you see a church member who doesn’t seem to show any works resulting from saving faith. How do you know if they are just an immature believer or not really a believer at all?

  4. How would you approach such a person (from question 2) if they were in your Small Group?

  5. James says Abraham was justified by works (James 2:21), but Paul says in Romans 4:2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.” Do James and Paul contradict each other? How would you explain this?

  • 00:40-00:42

    Let's turn to the Word.

    00:42-00:44

Are you there, James chapter two?

    00:45-00:53

And I'm going to ask that you would pray for me, and I will pray for you as we approach God's Word together today.

    00:57-01:06

Father, last week we talked about where your Word says we need to receive with meekness the implanted Word, and I pray, Father, for all of us here today.

    01:08-01:11

We're ready to hear from you.

    01:11-01:12

    We're ready to learn.

    01:15-01:19

Might the seed of your word fall on good soil in our hearts.

    01:22-01:27

And produce as only you can, Father, we glorify your name.

    01:29-01:32

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

    01:34-01:35

James, Chapter two, are you there?

    01:37-01:48

When I was interning out in Joliet, Illinois, I went to the first small group in this church, this Harvest Church where I was interning.

    01:49-01:53

And in this small group, they had an icebreaker question.

    01:53-01:58

It was, "Share the favorite vacation you've ever been on.

    01:58-02:03

"What's your most favorite vacation you've ever been on?" So they were going around the room and everybody was sharing.

    02:03-02:06

And I was seated next to this blonde woman.

    02:07-02:13

And they said her husband wasn't with her that night, but it got to be her turn.

    02:14-02:29

And she said, "Well, one time we were going to go on a cruise and she says, "My husband just really didn't wanna go." He said, "What is there going to be to do?

    02:29-02:31

What's it going to be like?

    02:31-02:33

Are there going to be black people there?

    02:34-02:42

And she kept talking and I was just like, did I just walk into a Klan meeting?

    02:42-02:44

Like what is going on here?

    02:44-02:47

It got almost as uncomfortable as the room is right now.

    02:50-02:52

And I'm thinking, okay, I'm obviously the outsider here.

    02:52-02:56

I'm the new guy, but I gotta say something here.

    02:58-02:59

    I can't just...

    03:01-03:04

So my mind's racing, okay, how are we going to address this?

    03:04-03:10

And finally, when she was done sharing, I'm not even sure what I said.

    03:10-03:24

I just turned to her and I said something like, I said, I have to ask, why was your husband concerned about black people being on the cruise?

    03:24-03:28

And she doubled over laughing hysterically, tears.

    03:29-03:43

She goes, "Oh my gosh." She says, "You don't know." She says, "You haven't met him." She goes, "My husband's black." I'm like, "Oh." And you know what?

    03:43-03:44

    He loves that story.

    03:44-03:45

    We became friends.

    03:45-03:47

    His name's Andre, great guy.

    03:47-03:49

    He loves that story.

    03:50-03:57

But it's a story of things that were potentially very ugly that turned out to be funny.

    03:59-04:03

But truth is real racism doesn't go that way, does it?

    04:05-04:33

You know, it's very sad and it's very strange that we live in a world where you pick a reason, any reason to hate someone to any degree, whether it's flat out hatred, despise, or whether it's, I don't like to be around that kind of person, whether it's skin color education, or looks, clothes, money.

    04:36-04:41

Call it racism, call it bigotry, call it prejudice.

    04:41-04:43

They all belong to the same rotten family.

    04:44-04:48

And here in James, he calls it partiality.

    04:49-04:52

And that's what we're gonna talk about today because that's where he goes in the text.

    04:54-04:58

So I have to ask you, are you a partial person?

    04:59-05:03

Would you consider yourself to be impartial?

    05:09-05:11

Do you treat everybody the same?

    05:12-05:16

I mean, do you really treat and value everybody the same?

    05:21-05:26

You know, what was it, a year or two ago, Nausea Harris from the Pittsburgh Steelers came to church here.

    05:26-05:28

Yes, it was an accident, but he came.

    05:29-05:30

    (congregation laughing)

    05:33-05:38

And there were a few of us that were totally geeking out, like, "Wow, Nausea Harris was here.

    05:38-05:41

Nausea Harris was here." And I was thinking a lot about that this week.

    05:41-05:45

Like, shouldn't we celebrate every first-time visitor like that?

    05:48-05:53

The reality is partiality can happen in the church, And it can happen in this church.

    05:55-05:57

And it's a serious thing to God.

    05:58-06:01

This is an extremely serious thing to God.

    06:02-06:04

So we have to start here very quickly.

    06:05-06:06

    God is impartial.

    06:08-06:08

    All right?

    06:08-06:12

We can't go any further really till we establish that.

    06:12-06:13

    God is impartial.

    06:14-06:31

Old Testament, Deuteronomy 10, 17 says, "For the Lord your God is a God of gods "and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, "and the awesome God who is not partial "and takes no bribe." New Testament, Peter discovered this as well.

    06:31-06:38

Acts chapter 10, says, "So Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I understand that God shows no partiality.

    06:40-06:56

"But in every nation, anyone who fears him "and does what is right is acceptable to him." See, the Bible says that God is impartial and as his children, if you are one of his children, he expects you to be as well.

    06:57-06:59

So again, that's where we're going in the text.

    07:00-07:04

The outline heading is how to love people like God loves people.

    07:05-07:07

So I want you to jot some things down here.

    07:07-07:10

Number one, don't deny your faith.

    07:11-07:14

    Christ followers are not partial.

    07:15-07:31

All right, verse one says, "My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory." So stop there, this is like the whole sermon.

    07:32-07:46

But if you say that you're a follower of Jesus, but you show partiality to people for any reason, It just doesn't make sense.

    07:47-07:54

He says you can't hold on to the faith and also be partial to people for any reason.

    07:54-07:59

It's in complete conflict with what we believe.

    08:02-08:07

It'd be like saying that someone is a Christian abortion advocate.

    08:07-08:10

You'd be like, that doesn't make any kind of sense.

    08:12-08:17

And for somebody to be a Christian racist, it doesn't make any sense.

    08:18-08:20

That's James's point here in verse one.

    08:20-08:21

    Look at verse two.

    08:21-08:34

He says, "For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in." I'll stop there.

    08:35-08:43

As we talk about partiality and all of that, understand that James was addressing the issue that his church needed to hear.

    08:44-08:58

And that was partiality, specifically due to social status, to money. That was the issue that they needed to have addressed. So he gives a hypothetical here, right?

    08:58-09:05

It's a hypothetical situation. He goes, "So, okay, so like a guy comes in wearing a a gold ring and fine clothing.

    09:11-09:22

Sadly, in our culture today, I don't imagine with this crowd, but if I would share this in a different setting, I think there'd be a lot of people that would be like, that's right, shame on the rich man.

    09:23-09:24

    Shame on the rich man.

    09:25-09:27

    Being rich is bad, right?

    09:28-09:30

Right, the bad man is rich, right?

    09:32-09:36

And that's not what he's saying here at all.

    09:38-09:42

A man having money isn't the problem.

    09:46-09:47

    I'm astounded.

    09:48-10:02

I never thought that I'd get at this point in my ministry where I've had so many occasions over the years where people have asked me, "Do you know what Joel Osteen makes?" I'm like, "Why do I care what Joel Osteen makes?

    10:02-10:03

    I'm not married to him.

    10:04-10:05

    Like, why do I care?

    10:07-10:15

But there's this mentality that if somebody has money, that's bad, and that is not at all what James is saying.

    10:16-10:16

    Okay?

    10:17-10:18

    What is he saying?

    10:18-10:19

    Look at verse three.

    10:19-10:35

He says, "If you pay attention to the one "who wears the fine clothing and say, "'You sit here in a good place,' you say to the poor man, you stand over there, or sit down on my feet.

    10:37-10:37

    Stop there.

    10:37-10:39

You see, the problem's not the rich man.

    10:41-10:42

    The problem's you.

    10:43-10:47

The problem is you when you treat people differently.

    10:48-10:48

    Right?

    10:49-10:50

Like, let's cater to this guy.

    10:51-10:54

This guy comes in, he obviously has money.

    10:54-10:58

Like, let's, you know, oh, we want this guy to be a part of our church.

    10:58-10:59

    He's got bags.

    10:59-11:02

You know, that's what the cool kids call having money now.

    11:02-11:04

At least that's what Samuel Gianetti told me.

    11:05-11:07

And, but that was a few months ago.

    11:07-11:09

    So that probably changed, right?

    11:11-11:12

    That probably changed.

    11:13-11:14

They're like, that guy's got bags.

    11:14-11:16

I bet he could really help the church.

    11:18-11:24

And some guy comes in and he's not looking like he has money.

    11:24-11:32

And you're like, Hey, hey bro, I don't really care where you go, but get where you're going, all right?

    11:34-11:41

And understand that the early church was mostly, mostly poor common people.

    11:44-11:52

So you could see why there was a temptation for this kind of bias in the people that James was addressing.

    11:54-11:56

    I'm not saying it's right.

    11:56-12:02

I'm saying I understand why there was this temptation for bias.

    12:02-12:04

You had this church where everybody's sitting around broke.

    12:05-12:14

And a wealthy guy walks in, it's like, "Hey, this guy could really help the church." Right?

    12:16-12:19

You know, contextualizing, and I think, you know, like church planting.

    12:20-12:27

You know, I remember church starting out having, you know, a dozen people, 20 people.

    12:27-12:30

We had new people and we had even less money.

    12:31-12:43

And I'm just saying in that scenario, it would be real easy, like if we had one of our church planting core group meetings where two new people come in and like, oh, hi, nice to meet you.

    12:44-12:44

    What do you do?

    12:44-12:48

Like, well, I'm the president of Allegheny Health.

    12:48-12:53

Like, whoa, oh, please, would you like to sit next to the podium?

    12:53-12:54

    I'm so glad you're here.

    12:55-12:58

And then the other guy comes in and you're like, hey, what do you do?

    12:59-13:03

And he's like, oh, I mop the floors of Pantera bread across the street.

    13:04-13:07

And I'm like, oh, well, you can just, you can wait in the lobby.

    13:09-13:14

You see, you're catering to people based on external things.

    13:14-13:18

    In verse four, not great.

    13:19-13:39

He says, "Have you not then made distinctions "among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts." James says, "Listen, you're making distinctions, "and that's evil because that is not like God at all.

    13:40-13:54

"That's not like God." You know, so often today we hear people virtue signal, whether in person or especially on social media, people wanna say things like, You know, I love everybody the same.

    13:55-13:58

I don't care if you're black or white or purple.

    13:58-14:02

I don't care where you work or what you do or what you have or what you make.

    14:05-14:05

    Is that really true?

    14:10-14:14

Because James is illustrating here, it doesn't really matter what you say, right?

    14:14-14:16

I guarantee you, everybody would say that.

    14:18-14:22

What matters is how you treat people.

    14:24-14:30

Because if the Bible is true, and I believe that it is, every single person that you meet is an eternal soul.

    14:33-14:45

And we each have our unique bodies and life circumstances, and we present a little differently, but we have to see everyone as an eternal soul with equal value.

    14:46-14:56

That's why James says you can't hold onto the faith and be partial at the same time, right?

    14:56-14:59

So how to love people like God loves people, don't deny your faith.

    15:00-15:04

That's just not who we are as followers of Jesus Christ.

    15:04-15:10

Number two, how to love people like God loves people, don't disregard reality.

    15:14-15:19

Rich does not equal great and poor does not equal bad.

    15:23-15:26

Rich does not equal great and poor does not equal bad.

    15:28-15:36

You know, we have this tendency to show favoritism to the rich because rich people are amazing and they only do amazing things.

    15:37-15:38

    True or false?

    15:39-15:45

Well, you're saying false, but we have to push back on this a little bit.

    15:47-15:51

Aren't we just overly fascinated by wealthy people?

    15:54-15:58

Like way too overly fascinated by wealthy people.

    15:59-16:06

Think of when I was a kid, there was a TV show called Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.

    16:06-16:08

How many people, show of hands, how many people remember that?

    16:09-16:13

with Robin Leach, "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." Remember that?

    16:13-16:16

That was a terrible impersonation, I'll work on it.

    16:16-16:22

And you're like, "Oh, I'm glad we don't have shows like that anymore." Have you ever heard of Cribs?

    16:23-16:24

How many of you heard of Cribs?

    16:25-16:26

    Oh, more of you, okay.

    16:27-16:28

Isn't that like the same thing?

    16:29-16:46

Like, "Hey, here's a wealthy person, let's check out their house." And the reality shows, it's astounding to me that we have reality shows, it's basically like, there's a camera crew in these people's living room and we're watching them watch TV.

    16:48-16:52

Oh, it's an exciting episode today, they're gonna go into the kitchen and fry an egg.

    16:53-16:55

Like, why are we watching this?

    16:57-17:00

Because they're rich and they're fascinating, right?

    17:01-17:15

We have shows like Jay Leno's Garage, where we get to see all of the cars rich man has. And again, there's nothing wrong with having money and having stuff.

    17:16-17:35

I just think it's so funny how, and so interesting, how fascinated we are. So not only do we have this tendency to be fascinated and therefore show favoritism to the rich, the other hand is we just naturally tend to snub the poor.

    17:39-17:47

That whether we would verbalize it or not, there's this tendency to think, well, poor destitute people just really aren't that important.

    17:49-17:51

That's a horrible thing to say out loud.

    17:54-17:55

It's a horrible attitude to have.

    17:57-18:03

There's no reality shows for poor or even regular type people.

    18:08-18:21

So if you're showing favoritism to the rich and you're snubbing the poor, well, James is about to tell us here, you're being ignorant because you just really haven't been paying attention.

    18:22-18:23

    Look at verse five.

    18:25-18:47

He says, "Listen, my beloved brothers, "has not God chosen those who are poor in the world "to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, "which he has promised to those who love him?" James says that God has this track record of going after the poor.

    18:47-19:26

Now listen, I'm gonna be saying this a few times because somebody's gonna like doze off tuned back in and completely missed the context of what we're saying here. Listen, this is a general statement. James isn't saying the only people who have ever had faith are poor people. He is not saying that. OK, James is not saying that he's making an in general statement. In fact, there's a lot of wealthy believers in Scripture, right? Abraham, Job, Solomon, Joseph of Arimathea.

    19:26-19:29

He's just speaking in general, in general.

    19:31-19:35

God has a special regard for the poor.

    19:36-19:37

    Okay?

    19:38-19:39

    Psalm 68, 10.

    19:39-19:49

"In your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy." Psalm 41, one says, "Blessed is the one who considers the poor." God has a heart for the poor.

    19:52-20:00

Proverbs 17, five says, "Whoever mocks the poor insults his maker." It's a pretty serious verse.

    20:05-20:16

And I could spend all morning telling you all the provisions that the Old Testament law had for taking care of the poor, but we're not gonna do that.

    20:16-20:17

    Look at verse six.

    20:18-20:26

He says, the first part, he says, "But you have dishonored the poor man." You've dishonored the poor by not loving them as you should.

    20:28-20:30

Do you think that they matter less?

    20:33-20:35

See James's point, he goes, not to God.

    20:35-20:40

If God regards them as such, how do you think you should treat them?

    20:43-20:51

Oh, for you, those of you that still do think that rich equals amazing, look at the rest of verse six.

    20:51-21:09

He says, "Are not the rich the ones who oppress you "and the ones who drag you into courts?" Again, in general, throughout history until today, how does it normally work?

    21:09-21:15

Do poor people oppress rich people or do rich people oppress poor people?

    21:16-21:18

Which way does that generally go?

    21:19-21:21

The rich oppress the poor, right?

    21:23-21:24

    That's James's point.

    21:24-21:38

Verse seven, he says, "Are they not the ones "who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called?" So again, in general, who do we hear mock and blaspheme the name of Jesus?

    21:38-21:41

In general, the poor or the rich?

    21:44-21:45

Well, think about it in these terms.

    21:45-21:55

Go on a mission trip to Vision Appalachia or to Thailand and tell me how much blasphemy you hear among the poor people there.

    21:56-22:06

And then turn on some kind of one of these goofy, you know, these Hollywood award shows where they get on TV and they all pat themselves on the back and applause each other and congratulate each other.

    22:07-22:09

And how much blasphemy are you gonna hear there?

    22:10-22:14

You see, that's James's point in general.

    22:16-22:16

    In general.

    22:20-22:26

James is saying partiality, showing favoritism towards the rich doesn't really make sense when you consider reality.

    22:29-22:45

When you consider history, James says, "Eh, the rich aren't always the best people." So to put somebody up on a pedestal just because they have money, James is saying that's not Not a great idea.

    22:48-22:49

    And the poor?

    22:50-22:54

Well, God seems to have a special place in his heart for them.

    22:56-22:56

    So should you.

    22:58-22:58

    Right?

    22:59-23:01

    So don't disregard reality.

    23:02-23:06

Rich doesn't always equal great, and poor doesn't always equal bad.

    23:07-23:12

And number three, don't disobey God's Word.

    23:14-23:16

    impartiality is a serious sin.

    23:18-23:18

    Look at verse eight.

    23:20-23:33

He says, "If you really fulfill the royal law, "according to the scripture, "you shall love your neighbor as yourself, "you are doing well." Love your neighbor as yourself.

    23:33-23:35

    That's Leviticus 19, 18.

    23:35-23:37

I think Jesus said something about that too, didn't he?

    23:42-23:45

We should love our neighbor as ourselves.

    23:46-23:47

    How, how do we love?

    23:47-23:49

How do we, he says, as yourself.

    23:50-23:52

And I've talked about this before.

    23:52-23:54

    We all love ourselves.

    23:56-23:57

    That's default mode.

    23:57-24:06

And I've shared with you even recently, it just kind of, it kind of irritates me when I hear people say, "You just need to learn how to love yourself." No, you don't.

    24:08-24:11

That's the problem that every single human being has.

    24:11-24:13

We are so in love with ourselves.

    24:13-24:20

We are so self-focused, self-absorbed, all about me, all about my preferences.

    24:21-24:23

Like, well, you know, somebody's gonna say, you know, Pastor Jeff, that's not me.

    24:24-24:24

    I hate myself.

    24:25-24:26

    I hate myself.

    24:26-24:27

    I just hate myself.

    24:27-24:35

That's a form of self-love because you're still putting all of the attention, all of the focus, all the spotlight on yourself.

    24:36-24:39

You're loving yourself by being so self-absorbed.

    24:41-24:48

But God's word tells us that we should love our neighbors as ourselves.

    24:51-24:52

Like, well, how do we do that?

    24:53-24:58

Well, who do you focus on taking care of?

    25:01-25:02

    Yourself, right?

    25:03-26:06

Don't you make sure that you're the one that has eaten, hydrated, you're warm enough. There's just this natural default mode that I'm always looking to make sure that my needs are taken care of. And you see when the Bible says to love your neighbor as yourself. Love isn't just sentimental feelings. Like, "Oh, I care about you. I feel a little warm fuzzies for you." Biblical love is not about the feelings. Biblical love is about meeting needs. And that's why James is bringing this verse up. If you were destitute, just pretend for a second that you were completely destitute and you walked into a church hoping that somebody could help you out somehow, how would you want people to treat you?

    26:11-26:14

Well, that's the way that you need to be treating others.

    26:15-26:20

James says, "If you're doing this, you're doing well." Actually well is a bit of an understatement.

    26:20-26:22

The Greek word could be translated excellently.

    26:24-26:25

    Look at verse nine.

    26:25-26:53

He says, "But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors." He says, "If you show partiality to people, you're guilty of sin and you're guilty of breaking God's law." And look, I can read the room here.

    26:56-27:07

I can tell on the look on a lot of your faces that you're like, yeah, he seems awfully fired up about a subject that just kind of doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

    27:09-27:10

I mean, is it really that big of a deal?

    27:10-27:24

I can understand talking about, you know, lust or talking about, you know, dangers of addiction or talking about, you know, like real hatred, but this I kind of prefer some people over others.

    27:25-27:26

Like, you're like, is this really a big deal?

    27:28-27:30

Like, Pastor Jeff, this is kind of a throwaway sermon.

    27:30-27:32

Can we get back to talking about some serious things?

    27:34-27:41

Well, according to James, this is as serious as it gets.

    27:44-27:45

    Because look at verse 10.

    27:49-28:01

He says, "For whoever keeps the whole law, "but fails at one point, "has become accountable for all of it." This is serious business.

    28:02-28:07

How many laws do you have to break in order to be called a lawbreaker?

    28:08-28:09

    How many?

    28:10-28:12

    Uno, right?

    28:12-28:12

    One.

    28:16-28:23

Breaking, this is what James is saying, Breaking any of God's law is defying God's authority.

    28:24-28:32

So even breaking it at one point, even a point that you don't think is that big of a deal, you're guilty of breaking the whole law.

    28:34-28:40

It would be like if I took a hammer and chisel and went over to the window and said, hey, I'm gonna get you just a little piece of glass off of here.

    28:40-28:50

I'm just gonna get you a little postage stamp-sized piece of glass off of this window for you, and I hold the chisel up there and crank with the hammer, what's gonna happen?

    28:50-28:53

Am I gonna get a little, just one little piece of glass?

    28:54-28:55

The whole thing's gonna shatter, right?

    28:55-28:58

And that's what James is saying about God's law.

    28:58-29:09

If you've broken it at one point, you've basically said, "God, I reject you "as the one who tells me what to do "because I'm not doing this." Well, guess what?

    29:09-29:10

Now you're guilty of the whole law.

    29:12-29:13

    This is serious business.

    29:13-29:14

    Look at verse 11.

    29:14-29:32

For he who said, 'Do not commit adultery,' also said, 'Do not murder.' If you do not commit adultery, but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law." James gives an illustration.

    29:34-29:36

He didn't just pick two random sins.

    29:37-29:39

You know, adultery and murder, do you know what they have in common?

    29:42-29:48

Those were two sins that required the death penalty under Old Testament law.

    29:50-29:57

Like, wow, James put the sin of partiality and very serious company very quickly, didn't he?

    29:59-30:13

And actually, if you think about it, it's in the murder family, Because didn't Jesus say that hatred is the same as murder?

    30:22-30:23

    It's not a small thing.

    30:26-30:28

Listen, and if you walk out of here today.

    30:30-30:33

Say, I, yeah, I see what he's saying, but you know what?

    30:34-30:37

There's just certain type of people that I don't prefer.

    30:38-30:39

    And I'm never going to.

    30:44-30:51

Well, according to James, you not only violated your profession of faith, but you've also violated the word of God.

    30:55-31:14

In verse 12, he says, "So speak and so act "as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty." James says, "You better speak and act "like someone who's going to be judged "because your works matter." And you're like, "Okay, all right, all right.

    31:17-31:23

"Now I know you've gone off the hizzy, Jeff, "because we're not saved by our works, right?

    31:27-31:28

    No, you're not.

    31:29-31:30

You're saved by faith in Christ.

    31:31-31:38

But, and this is going to be a whole other sermon someday, we're going to be judged by our works.

    31:42-31:49

We're going to be judged by our works because works reveal whether you have true faith or not.

    31:51-31:54

And that's the whole sermon next week, so we'll talk more about that then.

    31:55-31:57

But works are the basis of judgment.

    31:59-32:00

And that's why look at verse 13.

    32:00-32:17

He says, "For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy." You see, if you're someone, James is saying, that you don't show mercy to the poor, that shows that you've never known God's mercy.

    32:17-32:18

    You're unredeemed.

    32:19-32:26

You have no compassion, you have no grace, you have no mercy because when you know God, He changes you.

    32:27-32:31

And His spirit makes you love people like God loves people.

    32:33-32:38

So if you don't, you haven't been changed because you haven't been saved.

    32:39-32:44

And the judgment that you're going to receive is going to be horrible.

    32:45-32:50

He says, "Judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy.

    32:52-33:17

So, whether the people are rich or poor, whether they're black or white, or whether they're wearing tux or crocs, if you are saved, if you know God's mercy, you can't help but wanna give that kind of love to everyone and anyone.

    33:19-33:20

    without partiality.

    33:21-33:24

    Oh, one more thing.

    33:24-33:25

Look at the end of verse 13.

    33:26-33:32

He says, "Mercy triumphs over judgment." Underline that in your Bibles.

    33:38-34:18

Because when you have God's mercy, when you're someone who has experienced the mercy of God, by faith in Jesus Christ, you don't have to worry about judgment because mercy triumphs over judgment. Or, as our Lord put it, "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy." All right, that was the introduction. Here's the sermon. It's Really, verse 1.

    34:21-34:23

You can't hold on to the faith.

    34:23-34:25

    You can't say that you're a believer.

    34:25-34:35

You can't say that you're a follower of Jesus Christ and at the same time show partiality towards people.

    34:37-34:38

    It doesn't work.

    34:40-34:42

    It just doesn't work.

    34:44-34:48

And, you know, we look at some glorious truths in this text.

    34:48-34:52

He talked about breaking the law at one point, you're guilty of the whole loss.

    34:52-34:56

So that makes us all people who are desperately in need of grace.

    34:58-35:05

We see here that God is impartial, so we should not only be thankful for that, but we should imitate his impartiality.

    35:07-35:23

We see that we have no fear of judgment when we know Jesus Christ, "because mercy triumphs over judgment." And I thought, what better way is there to celebrate these truths than by gathering around his table?

    35:24-35:30

So I'm going to ask if our communion servers would come up and our worship team would make their way up.

    35:31-35:37

We're going to invite you to receive the Lord's Supper.

    35:38-35:49

Now, you don't have to be a member of this church to receive the Lord's Supper, but you do have to be a born-again believer in Jesus Christ.

    35:50-35:52

And if you are, he invites you.

    35:54-36:08

So in just a moment, the worship team's going to play and we're going to ask that you, when you're ready, that you would come down the center aisles, receive the elements from Brown up here, And then return to your seat to the outside aisle.

    36:08-36:12

And I'm going to ask that you would hold on to those elements.

    36:12-36:18

And then as a sign of unity in our church, I'll get up and we will take the Lord's Supper together.

    36:18-36:22

Okay, so whenever you're ready, please come and receive.

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. What are ways that you tend to label people that you need to refrain from?

  3. Why is partiality such a serious sin? How did James show us that it is (see James 2:9-11)?

  4. Is James condemning all rich people (James 2:6-7)? Why or why not?

  5. If we are saved by grace, and works do not save anyone, why are works the basis for judgment (James 2:12)? See also Revelation 22:12.

  • 00:40-00:45

All right, open up to James chapter one, and we're gonna bow for prayer.

    00:46-01:04

I'm gonna ask that you would please pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's word accurately and clearly, and I will pray for you to have a heart open to receiving what it is that God wants to teach us today from his word.

    01:04-01:05

These are his words, not mine.

    01:08-01:10

So we really need to tune in here.

    01:11-01:12

    All right, let's pray.

    01:17-01:22

Father, let your word do your work.

    01:24-01:27

    Let your Holy Spirit reign.

    01:33-01:48

Father, let today be a new chapter in the lives of many people who are sitting here or watching from home or listening to this digitally later.

    01:51-01:54

Glorify your name, Father, we ask in Jesus' name, amen.

    01:57-01:58

James chapter one, are you there?

    01:59-02:05

When my wife, Erin, was a teenager, And she went with some friends to Sandcastle.

    02:05-02:06

    You know where Sandcastle is?

    02:06-02:08

How many people here have been to Sandcastle?

    02:08-02:10

Okay, okay, so you know what I'm talking about.

    02:10-02:12

So her and a group of friends went to Sandcastle.

    02:13-02:18

And when she got home, they had turned on the news.

    02:19-02:28

And on the news, they said that there was a shootout between police and non-police.

    02:28-02:32

There was a shootout at Sandcastle that day.

    02:33-02:48

And as they were giving the report, Erin was watching the TV and she said, "Wait a minute." She goes, "We were there at the time of the shootout." This is unbelievable.

    02:48-02:50

Well, she was continuing to watch the report.

    02:52-02:54

And I kid you not, you ask her about this.

    02:54-03:04

As they were watching the news report, They saw their car drive right through the middle of the shootouts.

    03:08-03:14

And she had no idea that there was a shootout happening.

    03:16-03:22

Isn't that crazy to be there and completely missing it?

    03:22-03:23

    Isn't that crazy?

    03:28-03:34

Well, in a related snippet, let me ask you, have you ever missed church?

    03:37-03:45

And I don't mean you were absent because you were parasailing or at the beach or what, I don't mean that.

    03:48-03:52

I mean that you came to church and you still missed it.

    03:55-03:56

    Have you ever been there?

    03:57-03:58

Let's be honest, we all have.

    04:00-04:04

We've all walked out of church thinking, I didn't really get anything out of church today.

    04:06-04:12

We've all walked out of church going, yeah, that worship set, that wasn't really for me.

    04:14-04:17

By the way, that worship set was awesome I can't wait to do it again.

    04:18-04:22

But there's gonna be some people here that walk out feeling that way.

    04:22-04:24

Eh, it wasn't really for me, I didn't really care for those songs.

    04:24-04:26

More hymns, less, eh, I didn't really care for that.

    04:28-04:34

Or, gasp, you walk out of here going, eh, that sermon wasn't really for me.

    04:36-04:44

I don't know what the goat-looking boy up there was talking about, but that really, that wasn't, eh, that wasn't really for me.

    04:45-04:54

And my point here is you can be here and not be here.

    04:56-05:08

When you come in late, yelling at the kids all the way from the car to the door, when you're distracted, you got too much on your mind.

    05:12-05:15

Honestly, many of us come to church, we're not ready.

    05:16-05:20

We're just not ready to encounter God.

    05:22-05:24

And that's the message today, people.

    05:24-05:25

    You have to come ready.

    05:28-05:32

And I don't just mean putting on your church boots or your, I guess, church Crocs.

    05:32-05:33

    What are we wearing?

    05:34-05:35

    I don't just mean that.

    05:36-05:40

I mean that you have to make some decisions ahead of time.

    05:40-05:43

If you do, listen, here's the thing, you're gonna get the most out of church.

    05:44-05:45

Don't you wanna get the most out of your time here?

    05:46-05:51

You don't wanna walk out of here going, "That was a waste of a morning." Don't you wanna get the most out of your time here?

    05:52-05:52

    I do.

    05:54-05:55

So that's where James takes us here.

    05:55-05:57

On your outline, I want you to write some things down.

    05:59-06:02

    This is a life-changing passage.

    06:03-06:06

How to get the most out of church, all right?

    06:07-06:08

How to get the most out of church.

    06:09-06:13

Number one, come ready to hear God's word.

    06:14-06:18

Come ready to hear God's word.

    06:18-06:19

    Look at verse 19.

    06:22-06:26

He says, "Know this, my beloved brothers.

    06:28-06:37

"Let every person be quick to hear, "slow to speak, slow to anger." Stop there.

    06:38-06:38

    (laughs)

    06:39-06:41

Let every person be quick to hear.

    06:41-06:45

Do you know that verse is used in a generic sense all the time?

    06:46-06:56

You know, I've used like pre-marital counseling curriculum that uses this verse to say, you know, when you're husband and wife, you need to be quick to hear.

    06:59-07:08

You know, and then grandma says, you know, God gave you two ears and one mouth so that you listen twice as much as you speak.

    07:11-07:17

And I guess there is some wisdom in listening more than you speak, but that's not what he's talking about here.

    07:18-07:20

What's the context of this passage?

    07:22-07:24

The context is the previous verse, verse 18.

    07:25-07:29

He says that God brought us forth by the word of truth.

    07:29-07:30

    That's what he's talking about.

    07:30-07:36

This passage is about hearing the word of truth that he was just talking about.

    07:37-07:46

Literally in the Greek, he says, "Be quick to the hearing." That means take every opportunity you can to go after the word of God.

    07:48-07:49

    Like, why?

    07:51-07:53

Well, that's what we talked about the last couple of weeks.

    07:53-07:54

    Why?

    07:54-07:57

Why do I need to be so quick to go after the word of God?

    07:57-08:03

Because you're gonna experience trials in your life that seemingly crush you and you don't know what to do.

    08:04-08:06

You need to be quick to get to the word of God.

    08:06-08:09

You need to be quick to the word of God because you're gonna face temptation.

    08:10-08:12

And you're like, how do I deal with this?

    08:12-08:16

I don't wanna sin, but I get this strong temptation in me.

    08:16-08:20

How do I, you gotta be quick to get to the word of God.

    08:22-08:22

    Why?

    08:23-08:25

Why are we so quick to the word of God?

    08:25-08:33

Because you realize there's only one thing the Bible refers to as the power of God outside of Jesus Christ, personally.

    08:35-08:40

And I would think it'd be like creation power or judgment power or something like that.

    08:40-08:44

No, no, the only thing the Bible refers to as the power of God is the gospel.

    08:45-08:49

I'm not ashamed of the gospel for it is the power of God.

    08:49-08:50

This is the power of God.

    08:50-08:53

And that's why we need to be so quick to get to it.

    08:55-08:59

All right, you need to come ready to hear what God says.

    09:00-09:01

All right, so quick to hear.

    09:03-09:04

And then he says, be slow to speak.

    09:07-09:08

Boy, this is a word for me.

    09:10-09:10

    Are you like me?

    09:10-09:12

Sometimes we're just too quick to speak.

    09:13-09:15

We're just so quick to weigh in.

    09:15-09:24

We're so quick to bring our wisdom to the table that we come into church and you're like, oh, oh, oh, he's talking about trials today.

    09:24-09:27

Let me explain to you how you deal with trials.

    09:27-09:29

I know a thing or two about that.

    09:30-09:31

Let me explain it to you.

    09:32-09:34

Like it's explain it, what are you talking about?

    09:36-09:38

Or all the messages on marriage.

    09:38-09:40

I'm somewhat of an expert on marriage.

    09:40-09:43

Let me explain to you how a husband should treat his wife.

    09:43-09:45

And we're just so quick to speak.

    09:45-09:46

All the messages on kids today.

    09:46-09:48

Well, I know how to raise kids.

    09:48-09:50

Let me explain to you how to raise.

    09:50-09:53

And we're just so quick to interject our opinion.

    09:56-10:05

And what James is saying here is you need to come anxious not to share your words, but to hear God's words, right?

    10:06-10:10

And then he says, "Be slow to anger." Be slow to anger.

    10:12-10:18

Now the Greek word for anger there is not outburst of rage, right?

    10:19-10:24

Like you get ticked off and you explode and you kick the cat or whatever, then don't kick your cat.

    10:25-10:26

    I don't recommend that.

    10:27-10:28

But that's not the word here.

    10:29-10:30

    There's different words for anger.

    10:30-10:34

And this is the slow burn anger.

    10:35-10:43

This is, we could translate it resentment or seething or bitterness, right?

    10:43-10:46

That's the word, that's the concept that he's talking about here.

    10:50-10:53

    You're angry, you're bitter, you're resentful.

    10:54-10:55

It could be over life circumstances.

    10:57-11:06

You know, maybe you come into church and you're like, you know what, Jeff, I'm in a bad place right now.

    11:06-11:10

And I'm really not interested in hearing all this Jesus loves me stuff right now.

    11:10-11:13

I'm just not having it, just not in it, not in the mood for it.

    11:15-11:16

    Maybe it's that.

    11:16-11:25

Or, gasp, maybe you got a bit of a chip on your shoulder because of a subject that we've been preaching about.

    11:25-11:27

It's a little touchy to you, right?

    11:28-11:32

And maybe the sermon's about money or something, and you're like, "Oh, I knew it.

    11:33-11:35

That last church I went to, that's all I did was ask for money.

    11:35-11:42

I don't know why God needs my money." And now we're just like, we're ticked off, and we're like bitter.

    11:43-12:00

And he says, "No, no, you can't just jump to the default mode of seething." When you hear a sermon, are you asking, "What's God wanting me to learn?" Or are you coming in just bitter and resentful?

    12:01-12:04

Because if you are, you're only hurting yourself.

    12:04-12:05

    Look at verse 20.

    12:08-12:14

He says, "For the anger of man "does not produce the righteousness of God." What's God after?

    12:15-12:15

    What's God after?

    12:15-12:16

    What does God want?

    12:16-12:17

    He wants righteousness, right?

    12:18-12:21

    Personal holiness, growing in Christ-likeness.

    12:22-12:23

    How do you grow?

    12:23-12:24

How do you grow in your faith?

    12:25-12:27

There's only one way to grow in your faith.

    12:27-12:27

    You know that, right?

    12:28-12:31

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

    12:31-12:31

    What is that?

    12:31-12:32

    Romans 10, 17.

    12:33-12:35

That's how your faith grows, it's through the word.

    12:36-12:41

And that can't happen if the word is being proclaimed and you're fighting God on it.

    12:44-12:51

That can't happen if you're bitter, if you're ready to object, or you criticize.

    12:51-12:53

By the way, criticism is not a spiritual gift.

    12:53-12:56

It's not listed anywhere in the New Testament, but some people think that's their gift.

    12:57-12:59

They come in here to evaluate a sermon.

    12:59-13:02

Like, I didn't really like that, or I didn't really agree with that.

    13:02-13:04

    But what did God say?

    13:05-13:06

That's what we're going after, right?

    13:07-13:07

    Look at verse 21.

    13:08-13:15

He says, "Therefore," like, don't come to church like this.

    13:16-13:16

    So what should I do?

    13:16-13:18

    Look at this, verse 21.

    13:18-13:33

"Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls." You have to come to church ready.

    13:35-13:38

And part of that is having a repentant attitude.

    13:40-13:41

    It's having a repentant attitude.

    13:41-13:44

Sin will hinder the work of the word.

    13:45-13:54

You can't be committed to your sin and think that you're gonna get anything out of the sermon of the day, right?

    13:55-13:56

    It doesn't work that way.

    13:58-14:07

Like if you were wild partying, you were high Saturday night, don't expect to come in and get what's going on Sunday morning.

    14:08-14:19

If you're in a relationship that you know is sinful, and you're unwilling to repent, you're not gonna get anything out of the sermon.

    14:20-14:26

If your heart is full of hatred and unforgiveness, you're not gonna get anything out of the sermon.

    14:26-14:29

That's why James says you gotta put these things off.

    14:29-14:33

The Greek word is like taking off and discarding dirty clothes.

    14:33-14:33

    Get rid of that.

    14:33-14:39

You need to abandon your sin if you want a heart that's ready to hear from God.

    14:40-14:45

Because a heart full of sin doesn't have room to be filled with God's word, right?

    14:46-14:46

    Look what he says.

    14:47-14:49

    Receive with meekness.

    14:50-14:51

    Meekness.

    14:51-14:54

    That's a, look, be teachable.

    14:55-14:59

That means you need to come ready to learn.

    15:00-15:01

    That's what meekness is.

    15:01-15:07

I've come, God, I want to hear what you're saying.

    15:08-15:10

    I'm ready to learn.

    15:11-15:12

Do you come to church that way?

    15:14-15:16

You approach God's word that way.

    15:18-15:27

Many, many, many years ago, previous ministry, a couple came to me for marriage counseling and it was ugly.

    15:27-15:31

I'll spare you the details, but it was just, it was an ugly scene.

    15:32-15:35

And you can tell when you're counseling, right?

    15:36-15:41

The wife, she was edge of the seat, listening to every word.

    15:42-15:47

And the husband was slumped back, arms folded, rolling his eyes.

    15:51-15:54

And I said, look, here's the only way marriage works.

    15:56-15:59

And I just like poured out to them.

    15:59-16:08

I said, you know what the Bible says, Ephesians 5, that the husband is to represent Christ, the servant leader, lays down his life for his wife in every way.

    16:08-16:10

The husband has to love his wife in that way.

    16:10-16:21

And the wife, her job is to be that submissive helper to love the Lord the way the church, or love her husband, excuse me, love her husband the way the church loves the Lord.

    16:21-16:22

That's what I meant to say.

    16:23-16:25

But that's the picture in Ephesians five.

    16:26-16:28

And I just very clearly laid that out.

    16:28-16:30

    Husband represents the Lord.

    16:31-16:33

    I communicate for a living.

    16:33-16:33

    Back up.

    16:34-16:35

    The husband represents the Lord.

    16:37-16:38

    The wife represents the church.

    16:38-16:39

    That's the dynamic.

    16:40-16:44

And I remember just pouring out to them, waving the pom poms.

    16:44-16:47

You know, it was a good little sermon for those two people.

    16:47-16:48

It really was, it was a good sermon.

    16:48-16:49

    I've had a couple.

    16:49-16:50

    It was good.

    16:51-16:51

    (congregation laughing)

    16:52-16:53

    That's not funny.

    16:53-16:55

At least two, at least two.

    16:57-16:58

Poured my heart out to them.

    16:59-17:01

This was, okay, I had one good one.

    17:01-17:02

This was my one good one.

    17:04-17:05

    And I'll never forget it.

    17:05-17:10

The guy, he looked at me and he goes, Is that all you got?

    17:12-17:15

    And I said, yeah.

    17:16-17:18

    I said, that is.

    17:19-17:25

Because if the word of your creator isn't good enough for you, I have nothing else to give you.

    17:26-17:32

If what God said about marriage doesn't do it for you, it really doesn't matter what Jeff thinks about marriage.

    17:35-17:37

Anybody wanna take a guess how that marriage went?

    17:39-17:40

    You'd be right.

    17:41-17:44

And here's the thing, meekness, meekness.

    17:45-17:47

You're not going to listen to God if you're proud.

    17:49-17:50

    You've got your own answers.

    17:50-17:51

    You don't want God's answers.

    17:52-17:59

Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice." A true believer is tuned in.

    18:00-18:05

A true believer, a true believer, their antenna is receiving what God says.

    18:05-18:07

They're like, "Yeah, that's what God said.

    18:07-18:08

    Yes, that's his word.

    18:08-18:09

Yes, this is what God is saying.

    18:10-18:11

A true believer has their antenna up.

    18:13-18:14

    My sheep hear my voice.

    18:15-18:20

A true believer evaluates a sermon on, is that what it says?

    18:20-18:21

    Is that what God said?

    18:21-18:21

    Okay.

    18:23-18:33

And if I disagree, if I disagree with what the text says, then I am wrong, God is right, and I need to change.

    18:36-18:37

So did you come to learn from God?

    18:39-18:40

Is that why you came today?

    18:42-18:53

If it is, then you gotta ditch your opinions, your anger, and your pride, and you gotta listen to God with a repentant attitude.

    18:54-18:55

So how to get the most out of church?

    18:55-18:58

Number one, come ready to hear God's word.

    19:00-19:06

Number two, how to get the most out of church, you gotta leave ready to apply God's word.

    19:09-19:10

Leave ready to apply God's word.

    19:11-19:11

    Look at verse 22.

    19:13-19:25

He says, "But be doers of the word "and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves." Look, receiving the word is great.

    19:26-19:27

    Receiving the word is awesome.

    19:27-19:28

    All in favor, aye.

    19:28-19:29

    All opposed, nobody.

    19:29-19:30

We're all in favor of receiving the word.

    19:30-19:31

    That's great.

    19:31-19:35

What really matters is doing the Word.

    19:35-19:36

    That's what matters.

    19:38-19:47

Now, listen, at this point, I gotta stop for a second because there's always a couple in every crowd that's like legalism.

    19:48-19:48

    Here we go.

    19:49-19:50

Here we go with the legalism.

    19:54-19:57

And I would say lovingly, listen, you need to understand what legalism really is.

    19:57-20:01

Anytime somebody tells you to apply the Word of God, Somebody's ready to throw up the legalism flag.

    20:02-20:05

I guess throw it down, like the first quarter of the Steeler game.

    20:06-20:07

    Legalism, legalism.

    20:12-20:15

And much like those refs, you're wrong to throw those flags down.

    20:19-20:21

    This is what legalism is.

    20:21-20:26

Legalism is there are things that I have to do to make God happy.

    20:26-20:30

And when I do these things, God approves of me.

    20:30-20:32

And if I don't do these things, God is mad at me.

    20:33-20:39

I gotta do things to grow spiritually, like in God's eyes, and to make Him happy and to make Him accept me.

    20:40-20:41

    That's legalism.

    20:41-20:43

I do to make God happy.

    20:43-20:44

    That is not the gospel.

    20:46-20:50

Do you know there's only one thing you can do to make God happy?

    20:51-20:52

And we just studied it in Hebrews 11.

    20:53-20:56

Without faith, it is impossible to please God.

    20:57-21:02

The only thing you can do to make God happy biblically is to trust Him, to believe in His word.

    21:03-21:08

But when you do, when you really believe in His word, then it's gonna show up in your life.

    21:09-21:12

Don't say that you believe what God said and it makes no difference.

    21:13-21:14

You don't really believe it then.

    21:15-21:16

    All right?

    21:16-21:18

    True faith believes God's word.

    21:20-21:27

What that means is you should be able to point to things in your life where you say, "I do this because of what the Bible says.

    21:27-21:29

"That's the only reason I do this.

    21:29-21:32

"This is what I do because God said.

    21:32-21:35

"That's the only reason I do this is because God said." You should have things like that in your life.

    21:35-21:43

And there should be other things in your life that you say, "I do not ever do this "because God said I should never do that." There should be things like that in your life.

    21:43-21:53

And if you don't have things that you can point to in your life that show that the word of God is making decisions for you, then you don't know Jesus Christ.

    21:54-21:56

    And that can change.

    21:57-21:59

But you don't wanna sit here deceiving yourself.

    22:01-22:01

    Right?

    22:04-22:05

That's what he says in verse 22.

    22:06-22:07

    Look at that again.

    22:07-22:11

He says, "Be doers of the word, not hearers only." Deceiving yourselves.

    22:11-22:13

We talked about that before, didn't we?

    22:14-22:20

You tell yourself a lie and then you turn around and believe the lie that you just told yourself and it's just so tragic.

    22:21-22:24

And you walk out of here thinking you're a godly person.

    22:24-22:31

    because you heard a sermon.

    22:34-22:59

Look at verse 23. He says, "For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he He looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

    23:02-23:04

I love this, James gives us the illustration here, right?

    23:05-23:07

It's a mirror, they didn't have glass mirrors in those days.

    23:07-23:18

They would, a polished metal would be pounded real flat and polish it, but they used, they used mirrors for the same purpose that we use mirrors, right?

    23:20-23:21

    To check your face.

    23:23-23:30

Looking out here, I can't speak to the people that are watching this stream, but looking out here, it looks like most of you looked in a mirror this morning.

    23:32-23:33

    We appreciate that.

    23:36-23:37

James's illustration is pretty obvious, right?

    23:39-23:44

He says, "Hearing a sermon and not applying a sermon, "hearing the word of God, not applying the word of God." What's that like?

    23:45-23:51

He says, "It's like looking into a mirror." And you just, you look into a mirror and you just see all kinds of problems, right?

    23:53-23:54

Your hair looks like a rat's nest.

    23:56-23:58

You got all kinds of crusties in your eyes.

    23:59-24:00

    And it's disgusting, right?

    24:01-24:05

And you know, you just, you need to shave.

    24:06-24:12

You just, you look like an absolute, you got dirt on your face from gardening the day before.

    24:12-24:18

You got salsa on your chin from eating nachos in the garden.

    24:19-24:21

But you see all this disaster.

    24:22-24:23

    It's a disaster.

    24:26-24:29

You see all this, you see all this tragedy.

    24:30-24:31

    We'll go with tragedy.

    24:32-24:33

    Sorry.

    24:36-24:38

    Sorry, it's been a long 48 years.

    24:38-24:46

You see all this tragedy and you walk away from the mirror going, yeah, I look okay.

    24:49-24:50

    I look all right.

    24:52-24:56

I'm practically Fabio for those of you old enough to remember Fabio.

    24:56-25:00

Not when he got hit in the face by the bird, but before that.

    25:04-25:06

And James's point is, did it do you any good to look into a mirror?

    25:07-25:08

Did it do you any good?

    25:08-25:11

No, because you didn't do anything about it.

    25:12-25:14

You saw the mess and you didn't fix anything.

    25:16-25:17

So it didn't do you any good to even look.

    25:18-25:19

And James says the same way.

    25:19-25:30

Listen, you hear the word of God, and you see where you're falling short, you see where you need to change, and you walk out the doors and you just forget about it.

    25:31-25:36

You walk out the door, you're walking to your car, and you're like, "I'm okay.

    25:37-25:38

"I heard, yeah, you know what?

    25:40-25:44

"I felt really convicted in there, "but I'm really not that bad.

    25:49-26:16

"I'm okay." hand, look at verse 25, "But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing." All right, different word for look here in the Greek, rather, different word for look. He says to look intently.

    26:16-26:20

That's to really get in and take a hard look.

    26:20-26:22

And that's how you need to go after the word of God.

    26:22-26:24

Take a hard look at the word of God.

    26:26-26:31

Because my friends, if you will receive it, the word of God is the mirror that reveals who you are.

    26:33-26:41

You might think that you have a pretty good idea of who you are and what makes you tick, but God's word is the mirror that shows you what you're really like.

    26:45-26:48

and it's faith that says, "God is right.

    26:51-26:55

"I'm making some changes right now." I love this.

    26:55-27:10

He says, "A doer who acts is blessed." I want you to think about this because there's blessing for you when you apply God's word.

    27:11-27:12

Think about this for a second.

    27:13-27:16

Why does God want you to apply his word?

    27:19-27:19

    Why?

    27:20-27:24

Does God get a personal benefit out of you applying his word?

    27:26-27:27

    He really doesn't.

    27:27-27:30

Is he more God when you're obedient?

    27:31-27:31

    No.

    27:32-27:34

Is he less God when you're disobedient?

    27:35-27:38

Is he, when you're having a really good day, is he more worthy of praise?

    27:41-27:46

Or you have one of those days that the wheels fell off, is God less worthy of your praise?

    27:48-27:53

You see, your obedience doesn't give God some kind of personal perk.

    27:55-27:59

So why does God want you to obey his word?

    27:59-28:00

    Do you know why?

    28:00-28:01

    It's because he loves you.

    28:02-28:03

    That's why.

    28:03-28:04

    He loves you.

    28:05-28:15

And you know, I've been studying the Pentateuch, And this phrase comes up over and over and over in Deuteronomy or some version of this phrase.

    28:15-28:16

But look at Deuteronomy 6, 24.

    28:18-28:21

Moses said, "And the Lord commanded us "to do all these statutes.

    28:23-28:26

"And to fear the Lord our God." Look at this next phrase.

    28:26-28:29

There's some version of that all through Deuteronomy.

    28:30-28:33

    For our good always.

    28:33-28:35

Obeying God is good for who?

    28:36-28:36

    Who's it good for?

    28:37-28:38

Point to who it's good for.

    28:39-28:43

It's good for me that he might preserve us alive as we are to this day.

    28:43-28:49

And you're like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, that's so Old Testament." Okay, Jesus, John 13, 17.

    28:50-28:51

    Here's what our Lord said.

    28:52-28:56

If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

    28:58-28:59

    This is for you.

    29:00-29:00

    This is for you.

    29:02-29:10

So when we get up here and proclaim the word of God, whoever it is standing up here, whether it's Taylor or Justin or whoever's standing up here proclaiming the word of God.

    29:11-29:14

Understand, church, this is for you.

    29:17-29:20

And it does you no good if you don't do anything about it.

    29:25-29:28

Many years ago, my wife, she got me a gift.

    29:29-29:32

It was, she got me a set of those Beachbody DVDs.

    29:33-29:35

You know what I'm talking about, the Beachbody DVDs?

    29:36-29:36

    I got one right here.

    29:37-29:38

    This is T25.

    29:39-29:41

It's the 25 worst minutes of your day.

    29:42-29:43

    (congregation laughing)

    29:44-29:45

    This one's stretch.

    29:46-29:50

It's all stretching and I'm gonna be honest with you, this winded me.

    29:51-29:52

    It's just stretching.

    29:54-29:57

It's 25 minutes of realizing how out of shape I am.

    30:01-30:02

    Now, I gotta say this.

    30:02-30:04

    She's gonna be mad if I don't.

    30:04-30:09

She didn't get these for me, like, here, slob.

    30:09-30:09

    (laughs)

    30:10-30:11

    It wasn't like that.

    30:11-30:12

    I wanted them.

    30:12-30:16

I said, yeah, I think I would like to try that, and I was wrong, but she got these for me as a gift.

    30:18-30:18

    (audience laughs)

    30:22-30:30

But could you imagine if, like, a month later, Aaron was like, hey, how's your T25 going?

    30:31-30:32

And I'm like, oh, sweetie, it's awesome.

    30:34-30:36

I pop it into the DVD player.

    30:38-30:39

Explain that to a young person what that is.

    30:41-30:42

    Sweetie, it's awesome.

    30:42-30:43

I pop that into the DVD player.

    30:45-30:47

I get the wings out of the fryer and the potato chips.

    30:49-30:51

And I sit down and honey, I've watched it every day.

    30:52-30:56

I have watched one of these DVDs every day.

    30:57-30:59

And I'm not completely not health conscious.

    30:59-31:01

Like a couple of times I had a salad while I watched it.

    31:03-31:09

It still had fried chicken and donuts on it, but I've been watching these every single day.

    31:10-31:18

Did it do me any good, even if I watched this and thought, wow, that looks like a great exercise, that looks like that would make me healthy, looks like that would make me rip, beach body.

    31:22-31:26

Did it do me any good to watch it if I didn't do what it said?

    31:27-31:29

That's exactly what James is talking about here.

    31:29-31:30

Why did you come to church?

    31:31-31:32

Why are you sitting there taking notes?

    31:33-31:35

Why are you listening at all right now?

    31:35-31:42

Why are some of you gonna listen to these messages again if you have no intention on acting on what you hear?

    31:44-31:46

Because it's not gonna do you any good.

    31:48-31:52

The way a person responds to the word of God tells you everything about their faith.

    31:56-31:57

Like, all right, all right, all right, all right.

    31:57-32:00

Apply the word, be blessed, don't apply, deceive myself.

    32:02-32:08

You're like, "FA, can you be more specific?" Well, James does that for us.

    32:08-32:10

James gives us three specific areas of life.

    32:10-32:11

    We're gonna close with this.

    32:11-32:14

I'm gonna go through these very quickly 'cause all of these could be a sermon series.

    32:15-32:19

But James gives us, for the guy that's like, "Okay, this is a concept.

    32:19-32:21

"Okay, I get the concept, but can you be specific?

    32:22-32:30

"Give me something to sink my teeth into." Here's three specific areas of life that reveal whether or not you're applying God's word.

    32:30-32:31

I'm gonna tell you what they are ahead of time.

    32:31-32:32

we're gonna look through them quickly.

    32:33-32:36

Three areas of life that reveal whether or not you're applying God's word.

    32:36-32:43

    Your speech, compassion, right?

    32:43-32:45

And I totally lost my place.

    32:45-32:45

    Oh, there it is.

    32:46-32:48

    Worldliness, worldliness.

    32:50-32:51

    Look at verse 26.

    32:53-33:01

He says, "If anyone thinks he is religious "and does not bridle his tongue, but deceives his heart.

    33:03-33:04

    This person's religion is worthless.

    33:06-33:11

You think you're a religious person, you think you're a godly person, well, what comes out of your mouth?

    33:13-33:27

Listen, if it's perverted joking, words that you wouldn't use in a sermon, Gossip, slander.

    33:31-33:37

You know, what if I had like a court stenographer follow you around all week?

    33:38-33:41

And just with that little tiny typewriter, you know?

    33:41-33:46

What if I had a stenographer follow you around all week and record every single thing that came out of your mouth?

    33:46-34:00

And then we show up to church on Sunday and I pull out your transcript and say, "I'm going to read everything that he said "in the past week?" Would you be okay with me sharing that?

    34:00-34:02

Or would you be kind of squirming in your seat?

    34:06-34:06

    Right?

    34:08-34:09

    It's your speech.

    34:09-34:13

Oh, and by the way, P.S., what you put on social media counts too.

    34:18-34:19

    That's part of your speech.

    34:20-34:21

    That's part of your communication.

    34:21-34:39

Look, if you're getting on social media, posting perverted memes and dirty cartoons and foul language, what if we said, "Hey, we're gonna put your Facebook feed up on the screen, we're gonna scroll through it and show everybody.

    34:40-34:45

We're gonna talk about it, we're gonna evaluate your social media posts." Would you be embarrassed?

    34:49-34:51

    Here's a good verse to memorize, Matthew 12, 34.

    34:51-35:02

Matthew 1, 2, 3, 4 says, "For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." You know, when you open your mouth, you're just revealing what's in your heart, according to Jesus.

    35:04-35:09

When you open your mouth, you're sending a bucket down to the well and you're pulling out what's in here.

    35:10-35:12

And it shows up in your speech.

    35:13-35:36

So if what you say, the things you talk about, If it's tearing people down, if it's perverted, if it's ungodly, James says, "Your religion is worthless." Verse 27, next one is compassion.

    35:36-35:37

    Here's an area.

    35:37-35:50

He says, "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this, to visit orphans and widows in their affliction." And what do orphans and widows have in common?

    35:50-35:51

What do they have in common?

    35:52-35:59

It's this, these are people that you help that can give you nothing in return.

    36:00-36:01

That's what they have in common.

    36:05-36:06

    You get that, right?

    36:06-36:16

If I help someone that possibly in turn could help me with something down the road, It's possible that I had a selfish motive.

    36:17-36:20

I gotta scratch your back right now, you scratch my back later.

    36:21-36:22

    I might've had a selfish motive.

    36:24-36:30

But if I help someone who can't do a thing for me, that's like Jesus.

    36:33-36:36

And that, James says, is pure and undefiled religion.

    36:39-36:45

When was the last time that you helped someone in need and you expected nothing in return?

    36:49-36:54

    If you're like, man, I don't think I have.

    36:55-37:00

I can't really remember the last time I did something like that.

    37:02-37:06

And according to James, going to church didn't really do you any good, did it?

    37:08-37:09

And the last one is worldliness.

    37:12-37:13

Look at the last phrase here.

    37:13-37:18

He says, "And to keep oneself unstained from the world." Worldliness.

    37:19-37:24

I don't speak, act, or think like the world.

    37:25-37:27

The world doesn't affect who I am.

    37:27-37:28

    God's word does.

    37:29-37:30

That's what James is talking about.

    37:31-37:44

And if your friends and your coworkers would be shocked to find out that you go to church and that you call yourself a Christian, if that would surprise them, And then going to church did you no good.

    37:47-37:49

We can have our worship team make their way back up.

    37:49-38:06

You know, the book of James in the Bible has a very special place in my life because I got saved through studying the book of James by a complete stranger at the time.

    38:13-38:16

Because this person asked me if I was a Christian.

    38:17-38:19

You know, I was 20 years old at the time.

    38:19-38:21

I spent my life, I went to church every single week.

    38:22-38:23

I was in church every week.

    38:24-38:26

And sometimes I'd even pay attention.

    38:27-38:29

I went to Sunday school, I went to vacation Bible school.

    38:30-38:31

When I was old enough, I went to youth group.

    38:31-38:36

I was offended that somebody would ask me if I was a Christian.

    38:36-38:37

    What are you talking about?

    38:38-38:39

Look at my resume of church attendance.

    38:40-38:41

    I was like mad.

    38:43-38:45

And this person said, "Well, okay, great.

    38:46-38:46

    "Glad to hear it.

    38:47-38:50

"Would you be interested in, "oh, let's look and let's just do a little Bible study.

    38:50-38:54

"We can study the book of James." I'm like, okay.

    38:56-38:58

Didn't take us long before we got to this passage.

    39:00-39:01

    And I realized something.

    39:02-39:06

At that point in my life, I'm like, I'm no Christian.

    39:09-39:11

    I am a self-deceived churchgoer.

    39:14-39:27

And it was at that point in my life, this was 1995, it was at that point in my life that I realized I could either embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ, or I could go back to self-deception.

    39:28-39:30

I could go back to being church boy.

    39:33-39:38

and sitting in church on Sunday morning and living like the devil the rest of the week.

    39:43-39:55

And it's my hope in going through James that some people here recognize the crossroads and that some people here decide, you know what?

    39:55-39:57

I'm done, I'm done playing church.

    39:58-40:04

I'm done deceiving myself into thinking I'm so holy and religious just because I sit and listen to a sermon.

    40:05-40:06

    This is life.

    40:10-40:12

Well, look, you can walk out of here unchanged.

    40:13-40:14

    You have that option.

    40:16-40:19

And if you do, you're gonna have the same week this week that you had last week.

    40:21-40:25

And I would say, well, then coming to church, did you know good, you might as well sleep in on Sunday.

    40:28-40:39

Or you can commit to getting yourself ready from God, and you can leave with a clear plan of how this week is going to be different than last week.

    40:40-40:44

And hey, if that's you, you're going to get the most out of church.

    40:45-40:45

    Let's pray.

    40:46-41:09

Father in heaven, I thank you, Father, just personally, for the way this portion of your word destroyed me because it ripped open the curtain of self-deception that I was living behind.

    41:12-41:33

Father, I pray for my brothers and sisters here, and whether they're sitting here or watching the stream or whatever, God, I pray that you bring us all to place where we walk in here wanting to hear from you, and we're ready to put on the shelf all the stuff that distracts from that.

    41:34-41:39

And then when we leave here, we're saying, this is what I'm doing this week because of what God said.

    41:41-41:44

Father, you promised that we will be blessed in our doing.

    41:46-41:58

We thank you for the blessing that you give us, Father, And I pray that it brings great glory to your name, and it gives us opportunity to reach others with your glorious gospel.

    42:00-42:03

Father, please let us not deceive ourselves.

    42:04-42:06

Let us be doers and not just hearers.

    42:07-42:09

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  • 00:39-00:44

Back in the day, and this is a long time ago, I used to be pretty good at tennis.

    00:46-01:11

Thank you for not laughing at that. Like that seems believable. I mean, let's be honest, I wasn't Venus Williams, okay? I wasn't Serena Williams, okay? But I was okay. I was pretty good. I could keep up. Well, there was a guy who he asked "if I could play him," he was wanting to get ranked.

    01:12-01:16

And he had to get so many, I don't know all the rules for that, but he's like, "Hey, I didn't need an excuse, right?

    01:16-01:26

"Yeah, let's play tennis." And this man is, trying to think of the biblical way to say this.

    01:27-01:29

    He was advanced in years.

    01:31-01:39

And going into this tennis match, I was thinking, I'm gonna have to take it easy on him, right?

    01:40-01:47

Because he's advanced in years and I don't wanna embarrass him, then I'd feel bad.

    01:49-01:53

Well, I ended up feeling bad for a whole different reason.

    01:54-01:56

He mopped the court with me.

    01:58-02:07

And I gotta tell you, it was the most frustrating game I've ever played because it didn't matter what I did.

    02:07-02:12

He just seemed like he was always in the right place and he always had the right swing.

    02:13-02:17

And I remember I was like, you know, let's overpower him, right?

    02:17-02:20

You know, I'll try to get him on the, on the, on an ace serve.

    02:20-02:20

    Nope.

    02:21-02:22

    He could return every serve.

    02:22-02:25

And I'm like, all right, well, I'll just do a power game from the back.

    02:25-02:27

No, he was able to keep up.

    02:27-02:28

I'm like, all right, I'll rush up.

    02:29-02:29

    I'll charge in that.

    02:29-02:30

    I'll do a finesse thing.

    02:30-02:30

    Nope.

    02:31-02:32

I can do the backspin thing.

    02:32-02:37

You know, where you hit it in the ball when it lands, it bounces, you know, where you don't expect it.

    02:38-02:48

Everything I tried, he was just so casually like, "Katunk, katunk, katunk," and I got annihilated.

    02:50-02:58

No matter how hard I tried, no matter what I did, I could not beat this guy.

    02:59-03:03

And you know, today we're gonna be talking about temptation.

    03:04-03:11

And for a lot of Christians, you view temptation like that tennis match.

    03:12-03:15

That you're like, it doesn't matter how hard I try.

    03:16-03:17

It doesn't matter what I do.

    03:17-03:21

I just can't seem to beat temptation.

    03:23-03:26

Well, let's try it God's way, all right?

    03:28-03:28

    Let's bow our heads.

    03:28-03:35

I'm gonna ask you if you would please pray for me and I will pray for you because we're about to take some time studying God's word.

    03:35-03:37

This is a very serious thing to God.

    03:37-03:39

So it should be a very serious thing to us.

    03:39-03:40

    So let's pray.

    03:45-03:47

Father, please open our hearts up.

    03:49-03:51

Let our hearts be the good soil.

    03:56-04:09

that the Word falls on, that your Spirit, Father, is at work with your Word in a way that brings true life change in an area that, if we're honest, we all struggle in some way.

    04:10-04:35

I pray, Father, today would be the beginning of a new chapter, of a confident walk before you, because we don't just roll over to temptation and give up, wave the white flag, Father, but we are battling it the way you say to.

    04:37-04:39

    Father, glorify your name.

    04:40-04:44

We pray in Jesus' name, and all of God's people said, amen.

    04:45-04:47

    Look at James 1:13.

    04:51-05:00

He says, "Let no one say when he is tempted." Stop there for a second.

    05:00-05:01

Last week, we talked about trials.

    05:02-05:04

    Now he talks about temptation.

    05:04-05:09

So he moves from outward struggles to inward struggles.

    05:10-05:10

    Right?

    05:11-05:17

And we all face temptation of some kind.

    05:17-05:21

There's something that leads you to sin.

    05:23-05:24

    Maybe it's lust.

    05:25-05:27

    Maybe it's another person.

    05:28-05:30

    Maybe it's money.

    05:30-05:33

Maybe it's an addiction of some kind.

    05:33-05:36

    There's something that tempts you.

    05:38-05:41

So kind of like last week, we have a space at the top of your outline.

    05:41-05:45

I want you to write down the thing that tempts you, but hang on a second.

    05:46-05:52

'Cause I know right now in a room like this, she might be like, "Somebody's gonna look at my paper." Right?

    05:53-05:56

And do I have to, the whole time, try to cover up what I wrote?

    05:57-06:11

So here, just do initials of your temptation, maybe a code word that only you and God know so that we're not wrestling with the self-consciousness of somebody looking at your paper.

    06:11-06:15

But I do want you to write something down that makes sense to you.

    06:15-06:17

    Where are you tempted?

    06:17-06:19

Go ahead, take a moment, write that down.

    06:19-06:20

    Where are you tempted?

    06:20-06:23

    What tempts you into sin?

    06:40-06:42

Do you have your temptation down?

    06:45-06:47

    in the undecipherable code.

    06:48-06:54

Well, look, before we get into this, I get to remind you, temptation itself is not a sin, right?

    06:55-06:57

    Jesus was tempted.

    06:59-07:02

Our problem is that we give in and we sin.

    07:03-07:07

And then we get so stinking frustrated with ourselves.

    07:08-07:16

We knew better and now we feel so guilty and we swear that we're never gonna do it again until we do.

    07:18-07:20

So how do we beat temptation?

    07:23-07:25

That's what James tells us here.

    07:25-07:27

On your outline, I want you to jot some things down.

    07:28-07:29

    How to beat temptation.

    07:31-07:34

Number one, you gotta start here.

    07:34-07:35

    This is where James starts.

    07:35-07:36

This is where you gotta start.

    07:37-07:37

    Blame the right person.

    07:40-07:41

    Blame the right person.

    07:44-07:55

Because here's the thing, when we're tempted, this is true of every single human being, when we're tempted and we sin, we immediately look for someone else to blame.

    07:58-08:00

    We all do it, right?

    08:01-08:06

Well, I drink because my wife is a hag.

    08:10-08:12

    That's just an example, okay?

    08:12-08:14

    That's not from personal experience.

    08:20-08:27

Or, "I look at bad stuff on the internet "because my wife is cold towards me.

    08:30-08:32

"I overeat because my boss is mean.

    08:35-08:37

    "My friends made me.

    08:38-08:41

"My parents made me." How about this one?

    08:42-08:43

    God made me.

    08:45-08:49

And I mean that literally, that it's God's fault.

    08:50-08:52

My temptation is God's fault because God made me, right?

    08:54-08:55

    God created me.

    08:56-09:04

And all that I am and all these desires and things that I have, well, God created me, so it must be His fault, right?

    09:08-09:09

    Nothing new here.

    09:10-09:13

You know, this goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden, right?

    09:14-09:17

Remember Adam and Eve fell into sin.

    09:18-09:20

Look at Genesis 3, 12, we'll put it on the screen for you.

    09:20-09:35

It says, "The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me," this is Adam speaking to God, and God's like, "What'd you do?" And Adam's like, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, "she gave me fruit of the tree and I ate." Do you notice Adam?

    09:38-09:41

As soon as he was confronted with his sin, what did he do?

    09:42-09:43

    He immediately started blaming.

    09:43-09:52

And the really interesting thing to me about this is understand at this point in human history, Adam knew two individuals.

    09:53-09:55

    He knew exactly two individuals.

    09:56-09:58

He knew God and he knew Eve.

    09:58-10:04

And you notice when he was confronted with his sin, Adam literally blamed every single other person that he knew.

    10:05-10:12

He says, "The woman, oh, and by the way, God, "you put her here.

    10:13-10:21

"Things were awfully quiet before she showed up." I'm not saying, God, I'm just saying, I'm not saying, but I'm saying, you know what I mean?

    10:23-10:29

You put her here, God, so in a way, God, in a way, I mean, in a way, isn't this kind of on you?

    10:33-10:35

    There's nothing new here.

    10:35-10:41

Proverbs talks about this, a verse that I talk about often with my son.

    10:42-10:48

Proverbs 19.3 says, "When a man's folly "brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the Lord." Do you know what that means?

    10:49-10:56

It means we make stupid choices and then we face consequences for the stupid choices that we make.

    10:56-10:57

    And whose fault is it?

    10:58-10:58

    It's God's fault.

    10:59-11:00

    It's God's fault.

    11:03-11:41

And you're like, "Well, you know what, Jeff, last week, you said that God really ultimately is responsible through His sovereignty, through His providence for our trials. Does He also bring the temptations? No, He does not. All right? So you've got to stop that right now. Look at verse 13. He says, "Let no one say "when he is tempted, I'm being tempted by God." For God cannot be tempted with evil.

    11:43-11:46

And he himself tempts no one.

    11:47-11:51

That could also literally be translated, God is inexperienced with evil.

    11:52-11:56

He's not tempted and he doesn't tempt anyone.

    11:56-11:58

All right, so it's not God.

    12:00-12:08

God, that's just completely opposite of his nature to not only give in to temptation, but to try to tempt his people.

    12:09-12:12

He's like, no, no, no, that's completely not God.

    12:12-12:14

We're like, you're like, so, okay, all right, all right.

    12:14-12:16

    So who is to blame?

    12:16-12:19

Pastor Jeff, I wrote this thing down on the top of my outline here.

    12:19-12:22

I got my temptation in my little code here.

    12:25-12:27

So who is to blame for this?

    12:30-12:31

    Well, look at verse 14.

    12:31-12:54

He says, "But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire." James says, "We are lured and enticed by our own desire." Men, that is a, I guess some ladies, that is a trapping and fishing.

    12:55-12:58

is trapping and fishing terminology, lured and enticed.

    12:59-13:01

It's talking about capturing with bait.

    13:03-13:03

    All right?

    13:04-13:05

    You know how that works.

    13:06-13:18

Whether you're fishing or whether you set traps, the bait looks so good and it's so attractive and the animal comes to take it and the animal is captured.

    13:22-13:26

But is it really the bait responsible for capturing the animal?

    13:28-13:29

    Is it really the bait?

    13:34-13:37

If you think about it, it's really not the bait that does it.

    13:38-13:41

It's the inward desire of the animal that's responsible, right?

    13:44-13:49

It's the fact that most animals are just led by their appetites.

    13:51-13:56

and it's the animal's hunger, it's the animal's inward desire that gets it trapped.

    13:59-14:01

And James says, that's the same for you.

    14:04-14:09

When you're tempted, when you sin, whose fault is it?

    14:09-14:16

Not Satan, not demons, not God, you.

    14:17-14:18

    You are responsible.

    14:21-14:23

    because of what's inside you.

    14:23-14:25

You're like, wait, wait, wait, hang on a second.

    14:25-14:28

You're telling me it's not Satan's fault, it's not demons fault?

    14:28-14:38

Well, Jesus and his whole ministry was surrounded by demons and Satan came right after Jesus and he never gave in.

    14:40-14:43

James says it's our own desire.

    14:45-14:50

You know, the Bible says we each have an individual bent towards sin, Isaiah 53, six.

    14:50-14:53

We all like sheep have gone astray, each to his own way.

    14:54-14:58

You have a sin, a propensity, an inclination.

    15:00-15:02

It's gonna be different from person to person.

    15:03-15:05

That's why some people's sin looks weird to us.

    15:05-15:06

Like, I can't believe he's tempted by that.

    15:07-15:08

That's because that's not your inclination.

    15:09-15:12

But if that dude looked at your sin inclination, you look weird to him.

    15:14-15:18

because we all have our own desire.

    15:20-15:24

And it's that desire that lures us to the bait.

    15:25-15:30

So listen, the internet isn't the problem.

    15:33-15:38

Some of you might be too young to realize this, but people lusted before the internet was invented.

    15:40-15:41

    Can you believe that?

    15:43-15:45

The internet isn't the problem, you are.

    15:47-15:50

Alcohol isn't the problem, you are.

    15:52-15:57

Your spouse's attitude isn't the problem, you are.

    15:59-16:05

And you are never gonna beat temptation until you start here.

    16:07-16:11

When I'm tempted and when I sin, it's my fault.

    16:12-16:14

It's because of what's in here.

    16:14-16:15

    It's my fault.

    16:16-16:18

You're going to get nowhere until you get there.

    16:19-16:19

    All right?

    16:20-16:23

So James says, "How to beat temptation, number one, blame the right person.

    16:23-16:29

Number two, say no early." Look at verse 15.

    16:31-16:37

He's talking about our own desire, that propensity, that inclination towards sin that we have in our hearts.

    16:37-16:45

He says, look at this, "Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin.

    16:45-17:04

"And sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death." So he switches from the hunting and trapping and fishing metaphor to the childbirth metaphor.

    17:07-17:11

And James's point is simply this, sin is not an act.

    17:12-17:16

Sin is the result of a process.

    17:21-17:23

    Like how babies are born.

    17:24-17:30

Now, I don't have time this morning to explain to you how babies are made, okay?

    17:31-17:32

    Ask your mom.

    17:33-17:35

But I do wanna say this.

    17:37-17:41

Babies don't just miraculously show up in your house one day, do they?

    17:42-17:44

Like, oh, wow, we had another baby.

    17:44-17:45

    Didn't realize that.

    17:45-17:47

    The stork dropped him off.

    17:47-17:48

    That's not how it happens.

    17:49-17:53

There's a whole process that takes place for that baby to get there.

    17:54-17:57

And that's what he's saying about sin.

    17:58-18:02

Sin isn't this act that just happens like, whoa, holy smokes, I just sinned.

    18:02-18:03

How in the world did that happen?

    18:04-18:06

It's the result of a process.

    18:08-18:11

I mean, just think of that track.

    18:11-18:13

    Let's talk, let's just pick a sim.

    18:13-18:14

We'll just talk about drinking, for example.

    18:15-18:17

Let's say you have an alcohol problem.

    18:17-18:20

Let's just use that as an example.

    18:20-18:23

You can plug in whatever your temptation is here.

    18:23-18:26

But let's just talk about drinking for a second.

    18:26-18:28

If you're an alcoholic, it starts with desire.

    18:29-18:30

    You have that inclination.

    18:30-18:39

Some people have that inclination, some people don't, But it starts with that desire, an addictive tendency or an addictive personality or whatever you wanna call it.

    18:39-18:42

It's your sin inclination, you have that desire.

    18:43-18:50

And then with your sin, with your temptation, it goes to justification.

    18:52-18:56

And you are the master of justifying your own sin.

    18:57-19:01

I'm the master of justifying my own sin, right?

    19:03-19:11

Like the person that has struggled with alcoholism, they're gonna say things like, "Oh, I had a great day.

    19:12-19:17

"I deserve a drink." Or, "I had a horrible day.

    19:19-19:24

    "I'm having a drink." It's been a long day, I'm having a drink.

    19:24-19:27

It's been a short day, I have time for a drink.

    19:27-19:28

    You see my point?

    19:29-19:31

    Any excuse will do.

    19:31-19:36

And we all do that, whatever you wrote down on your, that's what we can justify that.

    19:40-19:44

And then the next step in the process involves your will.

    19:44-19:46

You make a plan to get it, right?

    19:46-19:49

You have the desire, you've justified it.

    19:49-19:53

Okay, but in this case, like the alcohol doesn't just miraculously show up.

    19:54-19:55

You have to make a plan.

    19:56-20:01

I'm going to do this, and here's where I'm going to go to drink, where I'm going to go to buy it.

    20:02-20:12

You make this plan, and then ultimately, the sin occurs, the act occurs.

    20:14-20:23

But if you try to deal with this when you sin, when it becomes the action, it's too late.

    20:24-20:26

And that's what James is saying here.

    20:26-20:35

That sin baby is born, and it grows up and it only ever brings one thing, death.

    20:38-20:39

    That's James's point here.

    20:39-20:43

You're like, well, is James talking to the Christians and the non-Christians?

    20:43-20:44

    Who's he talking to?

    20:44-20:46

    It's a universal principle.

    20:46-21:00

He says, "Sin only ever produces death." All sin ever does is destroy your relationships, your witness, your walk, your life.

    21:00-21:07

All of those things get destroyed by death when that sin baby is born.

    21:11-21:14

You know, jot this reference down, 2 Samuel 11.

    21:14-21:19

We've talked about it in past time, but it's the story of King David.

    21:21-21:24

He was supposed to be at war and he saw, he was home, he saw a woman bathing.

    21:25-21:26

    I'm paraphrasing here very quickly.

    21:27-21:35

He saw a woman bathing and he inquired about her, he sent for her and he ended up having an affair.

    21:35-21:38

Found out it was one of his soldiers who was off at war.

    21:38-21:40

Found out it was one of his soldier's wives.

    21:40-21:46

So he goes, "Oh, I gotta cover this up." So he brings that soldier back from war to try to get him to sleep with his wife to think that that was his baby.

    21:47-21:49

That didn't work, the soldier had too much honor.

    21:49-21:58

So he's like, "Well, I'm gonna get him drunk." And then he'll stagger home and be with his wife and think the baby's his, and even in his drunken state, he had more honor than King David in that moment.

    21:59-22:02

And then David had him murdered.

    22:05-22:08

    And it's a horrible story.

    22:12-22:19

If you're familiar with it, I just want you to think, when would it have been easiest for David to avoid all of the trouble that he got in?

    22:20-22:20

    When?

    22:22-22:26

I'll tell you when it wouldn't have been easiest is when the woman was at his house.

    22:28-22:36

It wouldn't have been easy when the flirtation and the physical contact and all of that started happening.

    22:37-22:38

It wouldn't have been easy then.

    22:38-22:42

When would it have been easiest for David to avoid all of this?

    22:42-22:50

The first moment that he saw her naked bathing, the first moment that he saw her, look, whoa, whoa, I shouldn't be, whoa, whoa.

    22:52-22:59

walk away, do anything else, would have been so much easier for David.

    23:01-23:07

You see, the principle is this, the earlier you fight, the easier the fight is.

    23:10-23:13

The earlier you fight, the easier the fight is.

    23:14-23:15

You're like, well, how do I say no early?

    23:17-23:18

    How do I do that?

    23:20-23:22

Well, you're gonna know where you're weak, right?

    23:24-23:25

You're gonna know where you're weak.

    23:25-23:27

You wrote something on your outline, right?

    23:27-23:29

And if you're like, I just couldn't think of anything.

    23:32-23:38

Well, you're either like delusional or Jesus, if you couldn't think of anything that leads you into sin.

    23:40-23:43

I'm leaning towards the former on that, if you couldn't think of anything to write.

    23:44-23:47

You're gonna know where you're weak and you're gonna confess that to the Lord.

    23:47-23:48

Oh, by the way, God already knows.

    23:49-23:53

It's not like you're gonna tell him something that is gonna embarrass you, he knows.

    23:53-23:57

But you need to confess that to the Lord and say, "God, this is where I struggle with temptation.

    23:58-24:06

This is where I'm weak." And we say no early, not just by knowing where you're weak, but by avoiding scenarios where you're tempted.

    24:09-24:12

    Avoiding scenarios where you're tempted.

    24:13-24:17

When you're tempted, when you sin, where are you in that moment?

    24:18-24:20

What are you doing in that moment?

    24:21-24:29

And you need to take steps to get out of that situation, to get away from those people, whatever it is.

    24:30-24:45

That's why Paul says, Romans 13, 14, he says, "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision "for the flesh to gratify his desires." That's how you win early.

    24:46-24:58

How much easier would it have been for David to look away before it got to where it got?

    24:59-25:03

How much easier would it be for you to say no early?

    25:05-25:11

When that, at the desire level, when you start to feel that temptation to do that, no, no, you know what?

    25:12-25:12

    No.

    25:13-25:14

    The answer is no.

    25:20-25:22

    You gotta say no early.

    25:24-25:29

Do you know the best way to not lose a fight?

    25:30-25:32

Do you know the best way to not lose a fight?

    25:33-25:33

    Don't show up.

    25:35-25:36

    Don't show up.

    25:38-25:43

When I was little, I'm talking little, like I was, I don't know, I couldn't be much more than seven or eight.

    25:43-25:44

    It was so long ago.

    25:46-25:53

But I was up at the campground, all the campers and the trailers and the tents and the playgrounds.

    25:53-25:57

Well, I was out riding my bike, like seven-year-olds did back then.

    25:57-25:57

    Do they still do that?

    25:58-26:06

I was out riding my bike, and I was going to this playground, and the playground had this really steep hill, and then it had a shuffle ball court.

    26:06-26:07

Do you know what shuffle ball?

    26:09-26:11

    Ask your mom that too.

    26:11-26:12

Your mom's got a lot of explaining to do.

    26:14-26:21

But anyways, I went down this hill and I kind of lost control of my bike and I hit this other kid on his bike, right?

    26:22-26:26

And we exchanged insurance and all that.

    26:28-26:30

I hit this kid on his bike and he was fine.

    26:31-26:31

    I just lost control.

    26:31-26:33

I was seven, come on, I was seven.

    26:33-26:34

Some of you are looking at me with such disgust.

    26:35-26:35

    I was seven.

    26:37-26:43

Well, this kid had an older brother And the older brother was like, "Four o'clock, right here.

    26:44-26:49

"Meet right here, we're gonna fight "because you ran into my brother." And I'm like, "But he's fine." It's like four o'clock.

    26:50-26:54

I don't know why, I look back at this now, I don't know why he scheduled it for four o'clock.

    26:55-27:00

Like, you know, he-man comes on at three, so we gotta do this at four.

    27:00-27:02

Like, is this gonna be on pay-per-view?

    27:02-27:05

Like, why do we have to come back for this?

    27:05-27:06

    And I'm seven, I didn't know anything.

    27:07-27:11

He's like, "Come back at four, we're gonna fight." And I'm just like, okay.

    27:13-27:19

And I remember, it was about 3.30, quarter to four.

    27:19-27:21

I'm walking back to the playground.

    27:21-27:22

    I'm like, I guess we're having a fight today.

    27:26-27:30

And my mom was out driving.

    27:30-27:31

She pulls up beside me in her car.

    27:32-27:33

She goes, what are you doing?

    27:34-27:35

    Well, I couldn't tell her.

    27:35-27:36

    I'm going to a fight.

    27:37-27:38

Did you give me a ride?

    27:39-27:40

Can you be my cut man?

    27:42-27:44

I was just like, oh, I'm heading to the playground.

    27:44-27:49

She goes, well, we have, supper's gonna be ready in a little bit.

    27:49-27:50

    Your dad's working.

    27:50-27:51

So just get in the car.

    27:51-27:53

    And I'm like, okay.

    27:55-27:55

So I got in the car.

    27:58-28:01

That guy's still probably standing at the playground waiting for the fight.

    28:03-28:04

    But I'll tell you something.

    28:07-28:08

    He was bigger than me.

    28:11-28:21

And he might've stomped me into a puddle, but I did not lose that fight because I didn't show up.

    28:23-28:26

You see, that's what James is telling us here about temptation.

    28:27-28:35

We try to deal with it way too late when instead we need to learn, make no provision for the flesh.

    28:37-28:38

    Look at verse 16.

    28:40-28:45

He says, "Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers." Don't be deceived.

    28:48-28:50

    You want to beat temptation?

    28:50-28:52

You got to stop deceiving yourself.

    28:52-29:00

We're just fish swimming around going, "Well, I'm sure there's no hook under that bait." We're deceiving ourselves.

    29:03-29:13

You see this, whatever this thing is that you wrote down, your temptation, if it wasn't so tragic, it would be funny.

    29:13-29:17

But with your temptation, you know what you do, every person does this.

    29:18-29:27

You tell yourself lies about this, and then you turn around and you believe the lie that you just told yourself about this.

    29:28-29:32

We all have this propensity church, Are we gonna wake up to it?

    29:34-29:37

Well, with your temptation, these are the lies we tell ourselves.

    29:37-29:38

Well, I'm not hurting anybody but me.

    29:40-29:40

    That's a lie.

    29:43-29:45

    Or I can handle this.

    29:45-29:46

You know, I can handle this.

    29:46-29:47

    Oh, really?

    29:48-29:48

    Really?

    29:49-29:50

How are we doing so far on that?

    29:51-29:52

    You're not handling it.

    29:54-29:55

    Or it's not that bad.

    29:55-29:56

    Yes, it is.

    29:57-29:57

    It's sin.

    29:58-29:59

    Knock it off.

    29:59-30:00

    It is that bad.

    30:01-30:05

The lies we tell ourself, and you know the biggest lie we tell ourselves is I'll quit tomorrow.

    30:06-30:09

This is the last time I'm gonna do this, but I'm gonna quit tomorrow.

    30:09-30:10

I'm gonna break up this relationship tomorrow.

    30:11-30:13

I'm gonna stop looking at this stuff tomorrow.

    30:13-30:16

I'm gonna stop ingesting this stuff tomorrow.

    30:16-30:18

Just one more night, just one more night, right?

    30:18-30:20

Pharaoh, just one more night with the frogs.

    30:20-30:21

    I'm done tomorrow.

    30:23-30:25

That's a lie that you tell yourself.

    30:27-30:31

You get to replace the lies with these truths.

    30:32-30:32

    This is sin.

    30:34-30:35

    It needs to stop.

    30:36-30:42

And I'm going to beat temptation if I learn how to say no early.

    30:44-30:45

Don't show up for the fight.

    30:48-30:52

Number three, how do I beat temptation?

    30:53-30:55

We get to blame the right person, you say no early.

    30:56-30:57

    Three, focus on God's gifts.

    30:58-30:58

    Look at verse 17.

    31:01-31:19

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, "coming down from the Father of lights, "with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." The Father of lights, that was the Jewish way of saying God is the creator.

    31:21-31:26

I love this, so it says, "He has, there's no variation, and there's no shadow due to change.

    31:26-31:27

    What does that mean?

    31:27-31:36

It means like, even with the sun, it looks like there's a lot of change in the amount of light that's given by the sun, right?

    31:37-31:41

Very bright in the middle of the day, then sunset, it seems like the sun's dimming.

    31:41-31:44

And then at night, it seems like the sun has turned off.

    31:44-31:49

So there's variation in the amount of light that even the sun gives seemingly.

    31:50-31:51

But he says, God's not like that.

    31:52-31:53

    There's no variation with Him.

    31:53-31:55

    God does not change.

    31:59-32:03

Everything that comes from God is good.

    32:06-32:15

Your family, your friends, your church, your small group.

    32:16-32:18

These are some of the gifts that God gives.

    32:20-32:21

    He gives so many.

    32:21-32:22

Do you know what else God gives?

    32:22-32:23

    God gives you purpose.

    32:25-32:26

    God gives you promises.

    32:26-32:31

God, through his word, which is another one of his gifts, gives us the gift of hope.

    32:31-32:38

I could go on and on and on talking about all of the gifts that God gives, but this is James's point.

    32:42-32:48

That if God only gives good and perfect gifts, why do we go after sin?

    32:51-32:53

Why do we turn our back on God?

    32:54-33:00

James says, "Yeah, everything that God gives is good." So let me ask you, what has sin gotten you?

    33:02-33:09

Is there somebody that can stand and give testimony to, "Hey, this one time I sinned and it was awesome.

    33:09-33:12

"Everything turned out great for me as a result." Can anybody give testimony to that?

    33:15-33:18

That your sin has brought you something good?

    33:20-33:22

    You know what sin brings?

    33:22-33:36

Sin brings guilt and shame and hurt and broken relationships and ruins your health and losing money and...

    33:36-33:38

Sin never takes you anywhere good.

    33:40-33:41

But all that God gives is good.

    33:44-34:40

Church, you will never overcome temptation, sin, the guilt, the shame. You'll never overcome these things if you try to do it the world's way. Because what we see in this verse is completely contradictory to secular psychology. Secular psychology says, "The problem is out there and the solution is in here, right? The problem is out there. We blame other people for our problems, other things, circumstances. The problem's out there, but the answer is here. You need to learn to love yourself, you need to learn to forgive yourself, and you need to affirm yourself, and blah blah blah. The Bible teaches something completely opposite to that. See, where secular psychology says "The problem's out here, the solution's in here." The Bible says, "No, no, no, no, no.

    34:40-34:44

"The problem's in here." And where's the solution?

    34:46-34:47

    The solution's out there.

    34:49-34:53

It's from the God who gives every good and perfect gift from above.

    34:54-34:55

That's where we get our help.

    34:55-34:57

We gotta get our help outside of ourselves.

    34:59-35:00

It never comes from within ourselves.

    35:03-35:06

So focus not on your temptation.

    35:07-35:19

You need to put your eyes and your time and your attention on the good things that God gives, and you're gonna find that you don't have any time or attention for the bait of temptation.

    35:20-35:21

    It's about focus, right?

    35:23-35:27

And then finally, remind yourself of your identity.

    35:30-35:31

    Look at verse 18.

    35:34-35:39

I could spend like probably two months preaching.

    35:39-35:40

There's just so much in this verse.

    35:41-35:41

    We're not gonna do that.

    35:44-35:45

    Look at verse 18.

    35:45-36:01

He says, "Of his own will, he brought us forth "by the word of truth, "that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures." Remind yourself of your identity.

    36:04-36:19

People excuse their sins saying, "Yeah, I can't help it, I was born this way." And I say, "Yeah, that's true." And that's exactly why Jesus said, "You must be born again." That's exactly what James is talking about.

    36:19-36:24

When it says God brought us forth, he's talking about this, God transformed us.

    36:24-36:26

God put his spirit in us.

    36:26-36:30

The Bible says that we become partakers of the divine nature.

    36:33-36:34

Like, well, how did that happen?

    36:34-36:37

He tells us it happened by the word of truth.

    36:38-36:40

Listen, this is how the gospel works.

    36:43-36:44

    A very short verse.

    36:46-36:47

You are dead in your sin.

    36:49-37:00

You hear the message from the Bible about what Jesus did, and you turn from your sin and receive Jesus Christ.

    37:00-37:06

And when you do that, the Bible says, God puts his Holy Spirit in you.

    37:08-37:10

And now you're alive in Christ.

    37:11-37:12

    You're a new creature.

    37:12-37:15

That's what Jesus called being born again.

    37:21-37:27

So hear me, the gospel is not about becoming a churchgoer.

    37:30-37:33

The gospel is not about becoming religious.

    37:34-37:38

And the gospel is not even about becoming a better person.

    37:39-37:43

The gospel is about becoming a new person.

    37:44-37:51

It's nothing less than a total transformation of who you are.

    37:53-37:55

You're like, well, what does that look like?

    37:55-37:59

"Were you not paying attention a few minutes ago?" This is what it looks like.

    38:00-38:02

    That's why we baptize.

    38:02-38:03

    It's the picture.

    38:03-38:14

When Lucas and Kelly went under the water, they were saying, "I'm dead." And when they're coming out of the water, they said, "I'm being raised in the newness of life.

    38:14-38:17

"I'm identifying with the life of Jesus Christ.

    38:18-38:19

    "He is alive in me.

    38:20-38:21

    "I'm a new person.

    38:21-38:26

"I'm not the same person that I was, "and it's because of Jesus Christ." That's what the gospel is.

    38:27-38:28

    That's what the gospel does.

    38:33-38:38

He says that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

    38:41-38:43

First fruits, that's an Old Testament concept.

    38:46-38:48

The concept of first fruits is this.

    38:48-38:57

You know, when they would bring in their crops, the very first and best part of their crops were to be given back to God.

    38:59-39:24

And I know it might be hard for us to understand unless you are a farmer here, but in that culture, there would be a real easy tendency to get that first batch of the crop in and hoard it, to say, "Hey, I'm gonna need this, I'm gonna have to eat, my family's gonna have to eat, I'm keeping this." But giving the first fruits back to God was an act of thanksgiving.

    39:25-39:33

It was an act of worship and catch this, it was an act of faith that the rest of the crop was coming.

    39:38-39:41

Like, well, what does that have to do with what James is talking about here?

    39:42-39:51

Listen, I've told you before the best verse in the Bible is Revelation 21 five.

    39:52-39:55

And don't give me this, it's all God's word, it all has equal value.

    39:55-39:57

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I get that.

    39:57-40:00

But the best verse in the Bible is Revelation 21 five.

    40:03-40:12

It says, "And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I'm making all things new.

    40:13-40:22

"Also he said," write this down, For these words are trustworthy and true.

    40:25-40:32

A day is coming when our Lord is going to make all things new.

    40:33-40:35

There's gonna be a new heavens.

    40:36-40:37

There's gonna be a new earth.

    40:37-40:41

There's not going to be sin or death or suffering.

    40:43-40:51

It's going to be a kingdom that's completely righteous, a kingdom that's not dominated by sin the way the world is now.

    40:55-41:06

You see, James reminds us here that we, church, born again believers, we are the first fruits of that.

    41:07-41:08

    Like, what does that mean?

    41:10-41:23

It means we, those who are born again, those who have been transformed by Jesus Christ, We are the first evidence of the promise of Him making all things new.

    41:24-41:25

    You understand that?

    41:27-41:29

If you're like, in other words, if you're like, well, how do we know?

    41:30-41:32

How do we know that God's going to make all things new?

    41:33-41:36

The answer is because by His grace, He made me new.

    41:37-41:40

I'm the first fruits of what's coming.

    41:41-41:44

This idea of newness and transformation.

    41:44-41:51

And if you are born again, you are proof of what is coming because God made you new.

    41:52-42:02

You are the first fruits of the new heavens and the new earth because you're new now.

    42:04-42:05

    You understand that?

    42:06-42:09

It's an identity issue is what it is.

    42:10-42:12

You need to see yourself as the first fruits.

    42:15-42:18

and saying, you know what, as first fruits, I belong to God.

    42:20-42:23

And as first fruits, I'm a new creature.

    42:24-42:30

And that kingdom that is coming, I represent that right now.

    42:33-42:40

The righteousness of God's kingdom, that's what I'm going after today.

    42:41-42:49

because even though that kingdom isn't fully here yet, it is here now in me.

    42:53-42:56

Do you understand what the implications of this are?

    42:57-43:01

'Cause somebody could say, well, what about pornography?

    43:04-43:12

The answer is, you know, there's a kingdom that's coming, a kingdom that I'm part of now, And in that kingdom, we don't do that.

    43:13-43:14

We don't do that in that kingdom.

    43:18-43:21

What about unfaithfulness in your marriage?

    43:23-43:25

You know what that kingdom that's coming?

    43:26-43:27

    I'm a part of that.

    43:27-43:28

    We don't do that stuff.

    43:29-43:30

    We don't do anything unfaithful.

    43:31-43:32

I'm part of that kingdom now.

    43:34-43:36

What about drunkenness or other addiction?

    43:36-43:38

    What about perverted joking?

    43:39-43:40

    What about greed?

    43:40-43:41

    What about slander?

    43:41-43:42

Like, I don't do that stuff.

    43:43-43:46

Because I'm part of the kingdom that's coming.

    43:46-43:47

    I'm the first fruits.

    43:50-43:52

That's not who I am anymore.

    43:54-44:06

So when you're faced with temptation, you need to remind yourself this, hey, hey, Jesus died for that sin, and he made me a new person.

    44:07-44:08

    And I'm not doing that.

    44:10-44:12

Because that's just not who I am anymore.

    44:16-44:16

    Then who am I?

    44:21-44:24

Well, I'm a person who fights temptation.

    44:28-44:35

And I'm a person who discovers that I win when I realize it's not God's fault, it's mine.

    44:39-44:41

I win when I say no early.

    44:43-44:48

I win when I get my eyes off of the things that tempt me and get them on the things that God gives.

    44:51-44:56

And I win when I remind myself, I'm the first fruits of God's new creation.

    44:57-45:02

I'm avoiding that sin, that temptation, because that's just not who I am.

    45:03-45:06

That's how you beat temptation, God's way.

    45:06-45:07

    Let's pray.

    45:09-45:15

Father in heaven, we thank you for your Word.

    45:16-45:26

And I just felt like we barely scratched the surface on everything that you're telling us in this passage.

    45:30-45:44

Father, I pray that these principles would take deep root into our hearts 'cause we are to represent you and your kingdom.

    45:44-45:48

And so often I do a lousy job of that.

    45:52-46:05

Father, let us be people who define sin and temptation and all of these things, define them and describe them and understand them in the way that you do.

    46:11-46:23

And go after resisting and beating temptation in the way that you've laid out here.

    46:26-46:30

For your glory and honor, Father, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
