Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery - Part 2

Introduction:

Two Problems Jesus Has with Divorce (Matthew 5:31–32):

  1. Divorce TRIVIALIZES MARRIAGE. (Matt 5:31)

Genesis 2:24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Deuteronomy 24:1–4When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and if she goes and becomes another man’s wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the LORD. And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance.

  2. Divorce RESULTS In ADULTERY. (Matt 5:32)

Ephesians 5:24–25Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her...

Matthew chapter five, are you there?

    00:04-00:12

This section we are in on the Sermon on the Mount is about the heart of God's law.

    00:13-00:21

And we saw that Jesus said, "I didn't come to abolish the law or destroy the law." That's what we would call the Old Testament.

    00:22-00:33

Jesus said, "I didn't come to do away with the Old Testament." He said, "I came to carry out everything that was said in it." It's not irrelevant at all.

    00:34-01:04

And through this section, you're going to see, as we've already seen many times, Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said, "but I say to you." And when Jesus says that, what he's saying is, "You've lowered God's standard." And Jesus is correcting them, and he's correcting us when we take the word of God and just make it purely external.

    01:06-01:07

    God wants your heart.

    01:10-01:11

    God wants your heart.

    01:12-01:14

That's what we saw a couple of weeks ago.

    01:14-01:23

Pastor Taylor taught us, you know, Jesus said, "Murder isn't just the physical act of killing someone.

    01:23-01:32

"It's a heart issue." We saw last week, adultery is not just the physical act, it's a heart issue.

    01:34-01:44

And in these verses we're looking at today, Jesus is continuing His teaching on the destructiveness of adultery.

    01:46-01:49

And today, we're gonna talk about divorce.

    01:52-02:00

And look, there's so much controversy on this topic.

    02:04-02:11

And if we're going to be honest, the controversy doesn't come really from God's word because the Bible is clear.

    02:15-02:27

The reason there's so much controversy is because if you are a divorced person, This gets very personal.

    02:29-02:30

    And it gets very painful.

    02:33-02:41

And look, I've done so many weddings over the past 20 some years, so many weddings.

    02:41-02:49

And I can tell you emphatically that nobody gets into marriage wanting a divorce.

    02:51-02:52

    It doesn't happen.

    02:53-03:12

I've never seen the wedding ceremony where the vows include something like, "I can't wait to be done with you." Or, "I love you today, but in six months, I will hate you more than anybody on the planet." Nobody thinks that.

    03:12-03:14

    Nobody expects that.

    03:14-03:20

And when divorce happens, it's always, it's just always so painful.

    03:23-03:34

And we get through a passage like this, and look, I know some of you are going to be tempted to tune out, because you're going to think, well, you know what, Jeff, you don't know my circumstances.

    03:37-03:38

    And you're right, I don't.

    03:40-03:42

    I don't know your circumstances.

    03:43-03:53

And I'm certainly not trying to be dismissive of the pain that you've gone through, and I'm certainly not trying to be judgmental for what brought about your divorce, if that's your situation.

    03:55-04:01

And I'm also keenly aware that I cannot exhaust everything that the Bible says on the subject in just one sermon.

    04:04-04:12

What I want us all to do, it's nothing new, I just want us to do what we do every week.

    04:12-04:19

We're just gonna take a giant step back And we're going to see what our Lord says on the subject.

    04:20-04:27

And we're going to see Jesus speaks on divorce here.

    04:32-04:39

And I can't undo anything that happened in the past, nor can you as much as we might want to.

    04:42-04:43

    It's gone.

    04:44-04:54

But I'm hoping with this message that we can prevent any future pain and hurt that comes from divorce.

    04:56-04:59

So let's look at Matthew chapter five, look at verses 31 and 32.

    05:01-05:10

Jesus says, "It was also said, "whoever divorces his wife, "let him give her a certificate of divorce.

    05:12-05:25

"But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife except on the ground of sexual immorality makes her commit adultery.

    05:26-05:35

And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." What is going on in these verses?

    05:36-05:38

Well, first of all, look at verse 31.

    05:38-05:43

Jesus says, "It was also said," what?

    05:43-05:52

Jesus gives a quote, "Whoever divorces his wife, "let him give her a certificate of divorce." You're like, is that what the Old Testament says?

    05:58-05:59

    Ish.

    06:02-06:03

    Here's the problem.

    06:06-06:19

This statement was used by the scribes and the Pharisees as a gross misrepresentation of a passage in the Old Testament.

    06:21-06:22

So does the Old Testament say that?

    06:22-06:31

Yeah, it kind of does, but they took it a direction that the Lord never intended it to go.

    06:33-06:42

The scribes and the Pharisees took a passage Deuteronomy, we're gonna look at here in a few moments, and they twisted it for their own purposes.

    06:45-06:52

Jesus says, "But I say to you," and this is one of the most difficult verses in your Bible.

    06:55-07:11

Jesus says, "I say, everyone who divorces his wife "except on the grounds of sexual immorality "makes her commit adultery." And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

    07:15-07:17

    So here's the short version.

    07:19-07:25

See the scribes and the Pharisees, as I said, twisted this passage in Deuteronomy and they reduced it to this.

    07:26-07:32

Look, divorce and remarriage is okay as long as it's legal.

    07:33-07:38

As long as you do the paperwork, it's fine.

    07:39-07:40

    It's just fine.

    07:40-07:41

    It is just fine.

    07:43-07:53

And I think it's obvious that Jesus did not agree with their assessment because he said, divorce leads to adultery.

    07:56-07:57

    That's the short version.

    07:59-08:01

So let's unpack that a little bit today.

    08:01-08:10

And on your outline, excuse me, or just very simply calling this two problems Jesus has with divorce.

    08:10-08:13

All right, let's look at these two verses very intently.

    08:13-08:17

And we see there's two problems that Jesus has with divorce.

    08:18-08:22

And number one, write this down, divorce trivializes marriage.

    08:28-08:29

    Divorce trivializes marriage.

    08:30-08:31

    That's the problem.

    08:35-08:44

Quick review, marriage was defined once and for all to the first two people that God created, Adam and Eve.

    08:45-08:47

And I know there have been attempts to redefine marriage.

    08:50-08:50

    Doesn't matter.

    08:51-08:53

God defined marriage once and for all.

    08:53-09:03

With the first two people that he created, Adam and Eve, And the most important verse in your Bible on marriage is Genesis 2:24.

    09:05-09:18

It says, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." That's the most important verse in the Bible about marriage.

    09:19-09:39

And I can say that emphatically because when Jesus was asked about marriage and divorce, this was the verse he quoted, Matthew 19, Mark 10, when the apostle Paul was writing about marriage and divorce and husband and wife issues, this was the verse he quoted, 1 Corinthians 6, Ephesians 5.

    09:39-09:47

God's plan in marriage is two people turning into one person.

    09:48-09:49

    That's the plan.

    09:50-09:53

There's not a relationship on the earth like that.

    09:54-09:56

    Not a business partnership.

    09:58-09:59

Not members of a sports team.

    10:00-10:03

There's nothing like the marriage relationship.

    10:03-10:06

This was God's intention of marriage in the very beginning.

    10:06-10:09

I want two people to turn into one person.

    10:14-10:23

And when you study Genesis, you'll see divorce was never part of God's original design for marriage.

    10:25-10:30

Like, all right, well, if it wasn't part of God's plan, where did divorce come from?

    10:32-10:34

Where did this idea for divorce come from?

    10:35-10:43

Well, allowance was made for divorce in the Old Testament law.

    10:45-10:47

I want you to look at this, we'll put this passage on the screen.

    10:47-10:57

I want you to look at it very closely because this is the passage that's in question here where Jesus is confronting the scribes and the Pharisees.

    10:58-10:59

    This is from Deuteronomy 24.

    11:01-11:40

Says, again, Law of Moses here, "When a man takes a wife and marries her, "If then she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, and then she goes and becomes another man's wife, and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house.

    11:42-12:04

Or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, then her former husband, who sent her away, that's husband number one, may not take her again to be his wife after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord.

    12:05-12:11

And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.

    12:15-12:20

Now listen, it's a tough passage, but we're going to get through this together.

    12:23-12:25

    Here's what Moses was saying.

    12:27-12:30

Divorce had to have a cause.

    12:31-12:35

And here it's defined in the law as some quotes, indecency.

    12:35-12:41

It could have been a natural or a moral or a physical defect or whatever.

    12:41-12:48

It had to be something that they categorized as unclean, whatever that is.

    12:51-12:56

This limited the possible reasons for divorce.

    12:56-12:58

    This was the purpose, understand.

    12:59-13:06

The reason Moses wrote this law was so that a man couldn't just divorce his wife for any reason whatsoever.

    13:07-13:10

You know, just make up some excuse, something frivolous.

    13:11-13:15

You know, I'm just divorcing you because I feel like it.

    13:15-13:23

You know, I don't like the meatloaf you made, or I don't like your new haircut, or, you know, those shoes look horrible.

    13:24-13:27

You can't just willy-nilly divorce your wife.

    13:27-13:33

Moses is saying, look, there has to be a reason for the divorce.

    13:34-13:38

So this was actually to emphasize the importance of marriage.

    13:39-13:42

Like, well, why would he allow the divorce then?

    13:43-13:44

    Why go through this?

    13:45-13:46

    Don't miss this.

    13:48-13:55

The purpose of divorce in this case in Deuteronomy 24 was to protect the woman.

    13:59-14:16

You see, when you give her the certificate of divorce, that woman had legal proof that, listen, she was dismissed from the marriage, but it was not because she was unfaithful.

    14:19-14:25

You see, that certificate for the woman showed, look, I did not have an affair.

    14:30-14:37

My husband found something wrong with me and dismissed me, but it wasn't because I was unfaithful.

    14:39-14:41

    That's what's going on in Deuteronomy 24.

    14:43-14:48

But I want you to see here, listen, because this is where the Pharisees and the scribes missed it.

    14:49-14:55

In Deuteronomy 24, there is not a command to divorce.

    14:57-15:01

That passage is just simply describing a scenario.

    15:03-15:11

In that passage, if we're gonna boil it down, we would say this, they were told to write a certificate of divorce if there was a divorce.

    15:12-15:19

The only command that you see in this passage, the only one in that passage is this.

    15:19-15:24

If you divorce your wife, you cannot take her back if she's rejected by her next husband.

    15:26-15:29

Or if he croaks, you cannot take her back.

    15:33-15:36

Again, the reason for this was to protect the woman.

    15:39-15:45

It was to keep women from being used and discarded.

    15:50-16:03

It was to keep men who are hogs, admittedly, it's to keep men from saying, you know what, I'm going to try out women.

    16:05-16:06

    But you know what?

    16:06-16:10

My first wife was better than this one.

    16:11-16:16

So I'm going to get rid of her and I'm gonna take the first one back because I preferred her.

    16:17-16:21

That's a horrible, horrible way to treat a woman.

    16:23-16:24

And see, that's the heart of the law here.

    16:24-16:25

Like God's like, no, no, no, no, no.

    16:25-16:28

You're not gonna treat women that way, men.

    16:30-16:32

This isn't a high school relationship.

    16:33-16:36

boyfriend, girlfriend, on again, off again.

    16:36-16:37

    No, no, no, no, no.

    16:37-16:39

We're not treating women like that.

    16:40-16:48

Marriage is a very serious covenant and you're not gonna just have a woman on a leash where you let her go and yank her back and let her go and yank her back.

    16:48-16:51

No, you are not allowed to do that.

    16:53-16:54

That's the heart of the law here.

    16:57-17:03

Deuteronomy 24 was intended to stop divorce from happening willy-nilly.

    17:04-17:06

Everybody on board with me now?

    17:07-17:13

Okay, because now I want you to see how the scribes and the Pharisees twisted it.

    17:13-17:16

Look at verse 31 again in Matthew chapter five.

    17:17-17:17

    Jesus quotes them.

    17:17-17:40

He says, "It was also said, whoever divorces his wife, "let him give her a certificate of divorce." What the scribes and the Pharisees did was, Through their twisting this passage, they actually made it say the opposite of what God intended.

    17:40-17:45

They used this passage to justify easy divorce.

    17:46-17:53

That you can get a divorce for any reason at all, so long as the paperwork is done.

    17:56-17:58

That's what they reduced this to.

    17:59-18:09

Like, well, look, you studied the Old Testament, It tells you very plainly, if you get a divorce, make sure that all the documents are filled out appropriately.

    18:12-18:14

And that's really all that matters, right?

    18:14-18:15

    That's all that matters.

    18:16-18:22

Just that we signed on the right line and we crossed our Ts and we dotted our Is.

    18:22-18:23

    That's really what matters.

    18:23-18:31

And as long as you do the paperwork, as long as the divorce is legal, hey, everybody's good with that because everything's above board then, right?

    18:31-18:36

I mean, I'm not like one of those, I'm not like one of those illegal divorcers, right?

    18:37-18:49

You know, that I get some, that I get some janky, unofficial, illegal divorce document from online, from the dark webs.

    18:50-18:51

    I'm not like that guy.

    18:53-18:55

You better be sure that when I get a divorce, it's done right.

    18:57-18:58

    That was their mindset.

    18:59-19:04

The law of Moses commands divorce to be done legally, so make sure that you do it right.

    19:06-19:10

And see, that's Jesus' problem with their attitude.

    19:11-19:14

He says, "Your attitude about divorce trivializes marriage.

    19:16-19:27

"And you have justified in your minds "the mistreatment of women in the name of making sure "the paperwork is filled out properly." That's not what the law's about, Jesus is saying.

    19:31-19:40

Now, over the years, I have heard all kinds of unbiblical justifications for people wanting a divorce.

    19:42-19:44

And I don't even have time to get into all that today.

    19:46-19:48

And we're going to get to the biblical reason for divorce in a moment.

    19:51-20:35

We need to stop here and say, "Listen, marriage should not be taken so lightly among God's people. The scribes and the Pharisees were so diligent to make sure that the divorce was done right. We, church, should be so diligent to make sure that the marriage is done right. So that's the first problem Jesus has with divorce. You trivialize marriage. You trivialize marriage. Not on board with that, but Here's the second problem Jesus says I have with your attitude towards divorce, scribes, Pharisees, church in 2025, divorce results in adultery.

    20:40-20:41

    Look at verse 32 again.

    20:42-20:47

Like I said, this is a difficult verse, but this is what our Lord said.

    20:49-21:04

Jesus said, "But I say to you, that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery.

    21:08-21:29

And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery." So Jesus is saying, listen, with divorce, even when the paperwork is done properly, divorce leads to nothing but more and more adultery.

    21:34-21:48

And I think one of the troubling things about this passage is I could see in my mind that I make choices that cause me to be guilty and suffer consequences for my own choices.

    21:48-21:58

But it's very clear here in verse 32, Jesus is saying that a choice for a divorce results in other people being guilty of sin.

    22:00-22:02

That's a tough pill to swallow, but that's what he said.

    22:05-22:06

    What does he mean?

    22:06-22:22

Well, in Deuteronomy 24, that passage we just looked at, when the woman was divorced for something less than sexual immorality, which by the way, sexual immorality breaks the bond of marriage.

    22:22-22:27

But in the Deuteronomy 24 case, she was divorced for something less than that, right?

    22:29-22:45

Jesus said, "Even when you divorce for less than sexual immorality, that still makes for an adulterous situation." Jesus said, "The divorced wife moves on, she consummates a new union when there was no grounds to break the first one.

    22:45-22:50

And if you do that, if you divorce like that, you are now guilty of adultery.

    22:51-22:54

And whoever marries that woman is guilty of adultery.

    22:54-22:58

And whoever marries you is guilty of adultery.

    22:58-23:13

Jesus is saying when you unbiblically break the marriage covenant and people go off and get remarried, he says now we've resulted in more and more adultery happening in other people.

    23:13-23:14

    That's what he said.

    23:17-23:26

He says, "Now everybody's guilty." So what Jesus is saying to the scribes and the Pharisees is that you could sit here and say, "Oh, I'm not an adulterer.

    23:27-23:33

"I have never, I have never "slept with another man's wife.

    23:33-23:40

"I have never committed adultery." Jesus says, "You shouldn't think that way.

    23:41-23:57

"Actually, you've made adultery worse because you have such a shallow view of divorce." Jesus said, "You lowered God's standard because all you're focused on is the external." I didn't commit adultery.

    23:58-23:59

    Jesus said, "You did.

    24:00-24:03

You commit adultery when you look at a woman lustfully.

    24:03-24:06

It proves that you already had adultery in your heart.

    24:06-24:13

And furthermore, when you divorce without biblical grounds, which Jesus says is sexual immorality.

    24:13-24:32

Jesus said, "You have committed adultery and you've made her and you made her new husband commit adultery too." Your sin not only affects you, but it affects so many more people than just you.

    24:34-24:42

And I really don't have to sell people who have experienced divorce, how far reaching the damage goes.

    24:43-24:49

The pain is not limited to just the two people in the marriage.

    24:56-24:58

I mentioned biblical grounds for divorce.

    25:01-25:14

Biblically, now looking at the whole counsel of God, Biblically, I believe that there is one grounds, one biblical grounds for divorce, and it's hard-heartedness.

    25:19-25:20

You're like, well, wait, wait, wait, wait.

    25:21-25:22

How do you know when somebody's hard-hearted?

    25:23-25:25

'Cause it'd be real easy, right?

    25:25-25:27

    They're like, I'm divorcing you because I think you're hard-hearted.

    25:28-25:30

Like, how do you know that somebody is hard-hearted?

    25:32-25:37

Well, biblically, hardheartedness in a marriage manifests in two ways.

    25:40-25:41

    One is abandonment.

    25:42-25:47

I don't have time to get into all this today, but just jot down 1 Corinthians 7:15.

    25:48-26:03

Abandonment, when you have a spouse who just walks out of the marriage, I'm not willing to counsel, I'm not willing to reconcile, I'm not willing to consider anything, I'm leaving you, I don't care, I am done, abandonment.

    26:03-26:08

My best understanding from scripture is that is biblical grounds for divorce.

    26:09-26:20

When you've tried, but your partner is completely unwilling, that gives evidence that their heart is so hard, they're not willing at all to invest in the covenant.

    26:21-26:22

    Abandonment.

    26:24-26:31

And the other evidence of hard-heartedness in marriage, what Jesus references here, and that's adultery.

    26:32-26:38

That's your heart is so hard towards your spouse that you were willing to physically sleep with somebody else.

    26:42-26:43

It's evidence of a hard heart.

    26:48-27:02

I want you to listen very closely because even these conditions, even these conditions, Even the issue of adultery does not obligate anyone to divorce.

    27:06-27:12

Because you study God's Word, God's Word never condones divorce and it never commands divorce.

    27:13-27:31

There is not one passage in your Bible where God says, "If this happens, I command my people to get a divorce." that it is legitimate, an abandonment and adultery, but it's still not commanded.

    27:34-27:40

So if you're married, you should do everything that you can to avoid divorce.

    27:44-27:52

See, the scribes and the Pharisees, they lived their marriages with one hand over the eject seat button.

    27:53-27:56

It's like, I'm not happy with you for any reason.

    27:56-27:57

    I am done.

    27:57-27:58

Jesus said, no, no, no, no, no.

    27:58-28:00

That's not how it should be.

    28:03-28:07

You should do everything you can to avoid divorce.

    28:10-28:12

You're like, well, what about abuse?

    28:13-28:16

What if I'm in a relationship where there's abuse?

    28:18-28:19

That absolutely should not be happening.

    28:21-28:28

And listen, if you're in an abusive situation, You need to let me know as soon as possible because we will protect you.

    28:28-28:29

We will get you out of harm's way.

    28:29-28:32

We will do everything to keep you from being abused.

    28:33-28:34

    That should not be happening.

    28:38-28:40

Somebody else would say, "Well, what about neglect?

    28:41-28:42

    "What about detachment?

    28:42-28:51

"What about my husband's a lazy bum?" Do not be too proud to get biblical counsel.

    28:53-28:56

Because there's something else I've seen over the last two and a half decades or so.

    28:57-28:59

    No marriage is beyond saving.

    29:01-29:18

I've seen marriages, I've seen couples come in hours away from filing for divorce, whose marriage ended up in a better place than it ever has been through the result of the ministry of the Word of God.

    29:20-29:26

If both parties are willing, the marriage can be saved.

    29:29-29:41

And when we talk about, yes, abuse and neglect and things like that, we have to readily admit that there are extreme cases that require extreme action, 100%.

    29:42-29:50

But in our day, like in Jesus' day, The vast majority of divorces weren't because of that.

    29:52-29:58

The vast majority of divorces were motivated by sinful, selfish desires.

    29:59-30:05

The vast majority of divorces result from people treating people like used cars.

    30:07-30:09

Like, "Oh, this one isn't working out for me.

    30:09-30:12

"I thought I would like it, "but I'm not really digging it anymore.

    30:13-30:17

"I'm just gonna trade it in." That's most divorces.

    30:20-30:40

And Jesus says, "No, you've reduced the marriage covenant, "you've trivialized it, you've made it purely external, "and now as a result, all kinds of adultery is happening "because you're unwilling to take marriage seriously." That should not be among God's people.

    30:44-30:46

You know, it's a hard passage.

    30:47-30:56

What I want us to do, just so I don't want anybody to think that this is some oddball passage.

    30:58-30:59

    This is a one-off.

    30:59-31:01

Because I want you to turn to Mark chapter 10.

    31:02-31:11

Because what I want you to see here is Jesus teaching the exact same thing, but in a different context.

    31:12-31:15

In Mark 10, the context you'll see, they were testing Jesus.

    31:17-31:18

They were trying to trap Jesus.

    31:18-31:19

They were always trying to trap Jesus.

    31:20-31:22

And they thought, "Oh, we know how to trap Jesus.

    31:22-31:24

We'll ask him about marriage and divorce.

    31:24-31:25

That'll get him for sure." Why?

    31:26-31:28

Well, you know the story of John the Baptist.

    31:29-31:35

He objected to a marriage and divorce and he lost his head.

    31:36-31:39

And I go, "We get Jesus on that, they'll get him for sure.

    31:40-31:48

We'll trap him." Now we have context, but I want you to see Jesus teaching the exact same thing, but in a different context.

    31:48-32:13

Mark 10, verse two, the Pharisees came up and in order to test him, asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" They're like, "We got him, we got him, slam dunk." Because see, if Jesus says no, we're like, Oh, you disagree with the Old Testament, which tells us to get a divorce.

    32:15-32:17

If Jesus says, no, you shouldn't get a divorce, rather.

    32:18-32:19

You're disagreeing with the Old Testament.

    32:19-32:22

But if Jesus says, oh yeah, you can get a divorce.

    32:22-32:25

Oh, now Jesus is taking marriage lightly.

    32:25-32:26

And we're gonna get him either way.

    32:28-32:33

You know, Jesus is disregarding the seriousness of marriage or he's disregarding what the Old Testament says about divorce.

    32:33-32:33

    We got him.

    32:34-32:34

    We got him.

    32:35-32:37

Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?

    32:39-32:40

    I love this.

    32:40-32:52

Jesus answered them, "What did Moses command you?" Jesus is like, "What's the Bible say?" Turned it back on them.

    32:53-32:59

They said, look at this, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce "and to send her away." Do you see?

    32:59-33:01

It's about the stinking paperwork again.

    33:03-33:05

That's all they were fixated on.

    33:05-33:30

"Moses said, fill out form A-27 and you're good." Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart," there it is, "Because of your hardness of heart, He wrote you this commandment, that from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female.

    33:30-33:38

Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother "and hold fast to his wife, "and the two shall become one flesh." Sound familiar?

    33:38-33:39

    Genesis 2.24.

    33:41-33:43

    Then Jesus comments on it.

    33:43-33:46

He says, "So they're no longer two, but one flesh.

    33:46-34:00

"What therefore God has joined together, "let not man separate." Verse 10 says, "And in the house, "the disciples asked him again." It was controversial, wasn't it?

    34:00-34:03

The disciples asked him again about this matter.

    34:03-34:11

And he said to them, whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her.

    34:11-34:16

And if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.

    34:16-34:17

You see, it's the same teaching.

    34:20-34:25

Same two points in this exchange that we see in Matthew chapter five.

    34:27-34:29

    Jesus says you've trivialized marriage.

    34:32-34:34

And it just causes more adultery.

    34:37-34:47

God takes marriage very seriously, especially to those who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ.

    34:48-34:50

    Why is God so...

    34:53-34:56

Why does God seem so strict about marriage?

    34:56-34:58

Why does God seem so serious about marriage?

    35:01-35:07

It's because divorce ultimately misrepresents God.

    35:12-35:24

See, God takes marriage seriously because there's a picture that's to be on display in the marriage.

    35:26-35:30

But when that picture is broken, God is misrepresented.

    35:31-35:34

Ephesians chapter five tells us what the picture is.

    35:36-35:49

It says, "Now as the church submits to Christ, "so also wives should submit in everything "to their husbands." Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

    35:49-35:53

See, this is the idea behind marriage.

    35:53-35:58

The ultimate goal of marriage is the ultimate goal of everything else in the universe, is to glorify God.

    36:00-36:11

And the way God is glorified in your marriage is by demonstrating the relationship that Jesus Christ has with his bride, the church.

    36:12-36:25

And in this picture, the wife represents the church, following, submitting, honoring, and the husband is to represent Jesus, loving, leading, laying his life down.

    36:27-36:35

And when you live this out, God is glorified and your marriage is blessed.

    36:37-36:42

But when you divorce, you're misrepresenting God.

    36:44-36:52

So my friends, what are we showing the world about God in the way we conduct ourselves?

    36:53-36:55

    in our marriages.

    36:57-37:00

Our worship team and communion servers would come up.

    37:02-37:10

It's only appropriate that we close by gathering around the Lord's table.

    37:13-37:17

Like, well, what does this have to do with marriage?

    37:19-37:20

    The answer is everything.

    37:23-37:31

Because we gather around the Lord's table, we are reminded that Jesus Christ has a covenant love for us.

    37:33-37:36

This love that Jesus Christ has for us is forever.

    37:38-37:39

    It's never going to change.

    37:42-37:48

And even when his bride fails him, and we do.

    37:49-37:50

    Oh, and we will.

    37:52-37:54

Jesus isn't gonna give up on us.

    37:57-38:03

This is our reminder of what covenant love looks like.

    38:04-38:11

And this is a reminder of how covenant love is to be demonstrated in our marriages.

Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery

Introduction:

2 Kings 18:4 – He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it (it was called Nehushtan).

Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery (Matthew 5:27-30):

  1. Adultery Is a DEVASTATING SIN. (Matt 5:27–28)

Matthew 15:19For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

Titus 1:15To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

  2. Adultery has DIRE CONSEQUNECES. (Matt 5:29–30)

1 Corinthians 6:9–10Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

  3. Adultery requires DRASTIC MEASURES. (Matt 5:29–30)

Romans 13:14 - But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

1 Corinthians 6:9–11And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

  • 00:00-00:04

Open up those Bibles to Matthew chapter 5.

    00:07-00:14

If you're visiting with us today, we are going through the Sermon on the Mount verse by verse.

    00:19-00:21

    And happy Mother's Day.

    00:23-00:42

The title of today's sermon is "Thou Shall Not Commit Adultery." We go where the text goes, okay?

    00:44-00:44

    That's what we do.

    00:46-00:48

We go where the text goes.

    00:49-00:50

    So let's do that.

    00:50-00:56

I'd like you to bow your heads please and just pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's Word.

    00:57-01:09

And I will pray for you to have a heart open to receive what is an extremely challenging passage.

    01:09-01:10

    Let's pray.

    01:17-01:21

Father in heaven, we thank you for your Word.

    01:23-01:25

We're not going to shy away from it.

    01:26-01:33

We just heard two testimonies of the way that your Word has transformed lives.

    01:34-01:37

We're going to hear at least four more in the next service.

    01:40-01:47

That's why we just want to go after your Word, God, because we believe that your word does your work, because that's what you said.

    01:49-01:51

And that is certainly what we've seen.

    01:52-02:01

So Father, I pray for all of us here today, all those who are gonna be listening, watching the stream or downloading the podcast.

    02:02-02:11

Father, I pray that you would bring revival in each and every heart in a way that greatly glorifies your name.

    02:12-02:14

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    02:14-02:18

And all of God's people said, Amen.

    02:18-02:18

    Amen.

    02:19-02:20

Matthew chapter five, are you there?

    02:21-02:31

In Numbers chapter 21, you have Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt to the promised land.

    02:32-02:37

And Israel complained and grumbled against God, against Moses.

    02:37-02:45

And the Lord sent these fiery serpents who, And these serpents bit some of the Israelites and many of them died.

    02:47-02:48

    Well, they repented.

    02:49-02:57

And God told Moses to put a bronze serpent on a pole.

    02:58-03:06

And if the Israelites, when they were bitten by one of the snakes, if they looked at this bronze serpent, they would live.

    03:08-03:19

Well then fast forward, Israel in the land established and they had kings, some kings were very bad and some kings were just not as bad.

    03:20-03:22

All right, can you relate to that at all?

    03:25-03:32

And Hezekiah was a king who was not as bad and he brought a lot of reforms to Israel.

    03:34-03:37

Here's one, we put this verse up from 2 Kings 18.

    03:38-03:45

Hezekiah says, "He removed the high places and broke the pillars and cut down the Asherah.

    03:45-03:50

And he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made.

    03:51-03:55

For until those days, the people of Israel had made offerings to it.

    03:57-04:02

It was called Nahushtin." See what happened?

    04:03-04:04

    You see what happened?

    04:04-04:17

people took a blessing that God gave them for their benefit, and they turned it into an idol.

    04:21-04:26

And that's exactly how it is with physical intimacy.

    04:29-04:43

It is a gift that God gave to people those in the covenant of marriage, but we have turned it into an idol.

    04:45-04:51

So in your outline today, this is it.

    04:52-04:55

    Thou shall not commit adultery.

    04:58-05:00

I want you to write some things down.

    05:02-05:05

    Number one, write this down.

    05:05-05:07

    Adultery is a devastating sin.

    05:10-05:12

    Adultery is a devastating sin.

    05:16-05:18

Now just that statement alone, it's a hard sell.

    05:20-05:24

Because we are a sex-obsessed culture.

    05:25-05:30

We've taken this gift from God, and we've perverted it, and we worship it.

    05:32-05:36

I mean, do I have to point that out at all?

    05:37-05:43

Like, look at all the homosexuality madness, all the transgender stuff.

    05:46-05:48

And you're like, "Yeah, you know what, Pastor Jeff?

    05:48-05:48

    You're right.

    05:48-05:49

    You're right.

    05:50-06:03

It's bad out there." And I would say, "Church, it's bad in here." I was reading some polls for what they're worth.

    06:04-06:10

But according to one poll, one half of self-identifying Christians believe that casual sex is okay.

    06:13-06:15

Consenting, but not in a relationship.

    06:15-06:16

    They believe that's okay.

    06:16-06:19

    Half think that's all right.

    06:20-06:20

    What?

    06:23-06:25

I read a poll about pornography use.

    06:26-06:30

    Among non-Christian men, 65%.

    06:33-06:35

    Like, yeah, that's pretty bad.

    06:36-06:39

    Christian men, 64%.

    06:45-06:49

In the same poll, lest you think, yeah, creepy men, right?

    06:50-06:53

Creepy men, same poll, 51% of women.

    06:56-07:02

And you know, at this point, you could be like, well, look, look, Jeff, we're only human.

    07:02-07:03

    Everyone does it.

    07:04-07:05

    It's not hurting anyone.

    07:09-07:14

Well, according to Jesus, it's a devastating sin.

    07:15-07:17

Look at verse 27, Matthew 5.

    07:18-07:25

Jesus said, "You have heard that it was said, "You shall not commit adultery." Stop there.

    07:26-07:28

    Adultery, what is adultery?

    07:29-07:34

Well, the technical term is defined as intercourse with another person's spouse.

    07:36-07:42

But it's become a catch-all term for relations with anyone who is not your spouse.

    07:42-07:49

And you're going to see in this passage, it's very clear that that's how Jesus was using the term in the most general sense possible.

    07:51-07:55

You go to Exodus 20 in verse 14, you see that it's the seventh commandments.

    07:56-08:05

You go to Deuteronomy 22 in verse 22, you'll see that under the law in Israel, adultery was punishable by death.

    08:07-08:09

And I don't have time to get into it this morning.

    08:10-08:12

We've done a whole sermon series on this by the way.

    08:13-08:23

But I just encourage you, if you're ready to just brush it off as all church people just making a big deal out of nothing, Read Proverbs 5, 6, and 7 sometime.

    08:24-08:28

And you will see that adultery is a devastating sin.

    08:31-08:34

I heard one pastor this past week call it a sin for fools.

    08:35-08:37

And I think that's a very good description.

    08:39-08:42

    Adultery, it's devastating.

    08:43-08:49

I mean, it wrecks you, destroys your reputation.

    08:50-08:54

It affects your relationship with your spouse, relationship with your kids.

    08:55-08:57

Oh, and the other person, what about them?

    08:57-08:58

    It affects...

    08:58-09:01

Now, if they're married, it affects their relationship with their spouse.

    09:01-09:06

If they have kids, it affects their kids and what it's done to their reputation.

    09:06-09:13

But the devastation of adultery is way deeper than that.

    09:14-09:15

    Look at verse 28.

    09:16-09:40

Jesus says, "But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Do you notice verse 27, verse 28, Jesus said, "You have heard, but I say to you." What was Jesus doing?

    09:40-09:42

Pastor Taylor talked about this last week.

    09:42-09:43

    Same thing with murder.

    09:44-09:45

    Same thing.

    09:45-09:52

Jesus was contrasting their definition of sin with God's definition of sin.

    09:53-09:57

Because their definition of sin in Jesus' day was all about externals.

    09:58-10:05

So when they hear adultery, they're thinking only in terms of the physical act with another person, that's it.

    10:05-10:07

    That alone is adultery.

    10:08-10:16

And Jesus says, "No, you're not." You're not taking it far enough in your understanding.

    10:16-10:20

It's a heart issue, like murder.

    10:21-10:25

You don't have to actually kill someone to be considered a murderer in the eyes of God.

    10:25-10:27

Jesus is saying the same thing about adultery.

    10:27-10:34

You don't have to physically be with another person to be an adulterer.

    10:40-10:41

    Look at verse 28 again.

    10:42-11:11

He says, "I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart." Now you have to understand this looking with lustful intent, It's not an accidental glance.

    11:12-11:13

    Okay?

    11:14-11:21

This is literally in the process of continuing to look.

    11:23-11:30

It's looking in such a way that you are fueling your sexual imagination.

    11:35-11:38

And when that happens, the deed's already done.

    11:40-11:42

    Adultery has happened.

    11:44-11:51

Now, listen, I don't want you to misunderstand, because it's even worse than you think it is.

    11:52-12:07

Listen, Jesus did not say, Jesus did not say that looking at a woman with lustful intent causes you to commit adultery in your hearts.

    12:11-12:19

Jesus said looking at a woman with lustful intent means you already committed adultery in your heart.

    12:24-12:35

Jesus is saying that you looked with lustful intent because it was already in your heart to commit adultery.

    12:40-12:42

See, I think this is where a lot of people get this mixed up.

    12:43-13:03

It's not, "Oh, I was going about my business "and I just stumbled across this woman "and I looked at her and that is what caused me to lust." That's not the extent of it.

    13:04-13:08

It's this, I have an adulterous heart that's looking for a woman to lust over.

    13:10-13:10

    See the difference?

    13:11-13:15

The look did not cause the lust.

    13:17-13:21

It is the lust that caused the look.

    13:22-13:23

    Do you see the difference?

    13:25-13:30

Look, look, I can't, there's no way I can overstate this.

    13:31-13:33

that this is a real problem.

    13:34-13:40

And this is a real problem that people sitting here have right now and are not dealing with it.

    13:42-13:46

You're not an adulterer because of something you do, it's who you are.

    13:46-13:47

    It's a hard thing.

    13:49-14:26

You see with adultery, like murder, as Pastor Taylor talked about last week, before it's an act, even if it doesn't become an act, act. That is what is in your hearts. This is the heart of the law. Jesus said in Matthew 15, 19, "For out of the heart, out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, Sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander.

    14:26-14:27

    You see that?

    14:28-14:33

The sinful acts are symptoms of a sinful condition.

    14:33-14:39

Committing the act of adultery, those are the leaves on the tree that has the root of an adulterous heart.

    14:42-14:52

And if you're sitting here still somehow magnanimously saying in your head, "I would never commit the act.

    14:53-14:56

I did not and I would never commit the act of adultery.

    14:59-15:08

But if that sin is in your mind, if that sin is constantly in your imagination, you have a real problem.

    15:11-15:14

That's why pornography is such a big business.

    15:14-15:14

    Why?

    15:15-15:19

Because sinful hearts are literally searching for it.

    15:22-15:33

And you have to understand that if that's your issue, the sin started even before you got online, because it's in here.

    15:38-15:41

It's a devastating condition to live in.

    15:44-15:54

You're unable to live a holy and upright life because when your heart is full of adultery, It just, it perverts everything.

    15:57-15:58

    Like consider Titus 1:15.

    15:59-16:00

    Look at this verse.

    16:02-16:23

Paul says, "To the pure, all things are pure, "but to the defiled and unbelieving," meaning your heart is full of perversion and sin, "to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.

    16:24-16:25

Do you know what that means?

    16:26-16:36

That means that when you're in that latter condition, you cannot look at another woman purely.

    16:38-16:44

You cannot see another woman as a sister, as a mom, as even just another human being.

    16:47-16:52

That when this is where your heart is, every woman that you encounter, you're evaluating.

    16:55-17:04

And many become objects in your minds and hearts of fantasies, and lust just becomes all-consuming.

    17:09-17:15

And the people that live in this defiled state don't even see a problem.

    17:18-17:25

gift of marital intimacy has become an idol that you use to gratify your flesh.

    17:26-17:31

So see, Jesus is telling us out the gate, this is a devastating condition.

    17:33-17:44

Secondly, thou shalt not commit adultery. Not only is adultery a devastating sin, but adultery has dire consequences. Adultery has dire consequences.

    17:47-18:50

Look at verses 29 and 30. These two verses kind of saying the same thing, but this is some of the most startling stuff Jesus ever said, in my opinion. He says, "If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away, for it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell." And you're like, "Man, gouge out your eye? Like cut off your hand? Like If that's the part you're focusing on, then you have completely missed the point.

    18:53-18:55

Because neither of those things are extreme.

    18:57-19:01

They're not extreme at all compared to hell.

    19:03-19:07

Notice twice Jesus says, "Thrown into hell." Thrown into hell.

    19:07-19:09

    What's the obvious implication?

    19:09-19:10

    We get it.

    19:11-19:12

    We get what he's saying.

    19:12-19:17

Jesus is saying here that people with adulterous hearts go to hell.

    19:22-19:25

If you're still not convinced, Paul backs this up.

    19:25-19:28

    1 Corinthians 6, verses nine through 10.

    19:28-19:38

He says, "Or do you not know that the unrighteous "will not inherit the kingdom of God?" Meaning go to heaven, meaning go to hell.

    19:40-19:43

He says, "Do not be deceived.

    19:43-20:05

Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." Your priority in this life, more than anything, should be preparing yourself for eternity.

    20:11-20:12

    Are you doing that?

    20:15-20:17

Because the Bible says your decisions in this life matter.

    20:19-20:21

And someday you're going to stand before God.

    20:22-20:31

So if lust is a problem for you, if lust characterizes you, and look, I can't answer that.

    20:35-20:43

I can't answer that for you, but you know if this sin consumes who you are.

    20:44-20:47

And if it characterizes you, there are consequences.

    20:49-20:56

As we talked about before, here and now, apparently, obviously, easily seen, there are consequences for adultery.

    20:57-21:02

But Jesus says there's also consequences when you take your last breath.

    21:05-21:06

    Adultery has dire consequences.

    21:12-21:15

So let's talk about the other big thing in these verses.

    21:15-21:20

Number three, adultery requires drastic measures.

    21:23-21:24

    Look at them again.

    21:25-21:29

He says, "If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.

    21:30-21:34

For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

    21:34-21:39

And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.

    21:39-21:44

For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

    21:46-21:51

Weren't you just blessed by the obedience of those who were baptized today?

    21:52-21:54

Wouldn't you say obedience is a wonderful thing?

    21:57-21:58

    Awesome.

    22:00-22:00

    Who's first?

    22:04-22:08

I mean, didn't Jesus just say, if your hand causes you to sin, to cut it off?

    22:09-22:10

    Who's first?

    22:11-22:14

We're not gonna do it over the tub 'cause we get more baptisms in the next service.

    22:19-22:21

And you're like, yeah, what about the other verse?

    22:21-22:22

    Oh, don't worry.

    22:25-22:26

We can take care of the eye too.

    22:29-22:30

We'll get Pastor Taylor up here.

    22:30-22:31

We'll do them both at the same time.

    22:34-22:35

    You won't know.

    22:37-22:40

You won't even know what's going on when both of them are happening at the same time.

    22:43-22:51

And you're like, man, gouging out your eye and cutting off your hand.

    22:54-22:57

    Man, that sounds drastic.

    23:00-23:02

    Oh, it absolutely is.

    23:04-23:06

Maybe even more than you think.

    23:06-23:14

Because you see, Jesus was speaking to Jews, and the Jews viewed the right greater than the left.

    23:15-23:20

Just as a general thing, if you're left-handed, I don't need any hate emails, okay?

    23:22-23:24

That's just the way it was, right?

    23:24-23:26

Sitting at the right hand, my right hand man.

    23:27-23:29

The idea was right is better than left.

    23:31-23:41

So your right eye and your right hand and the Jewish mindset, those were the two most important things that you own.

    23:43-23:58

What Jesus is saying is this, there is nothing that is too important to eliminate from your life if it is causing you to sin.

    24:02-24:04

    Adultery is destructive.

    24:05-24:06

    It's enslaving.

    24:06-24:08

    It's condemning.

    24:11-24:13

    We gotta deal with that.

    24:14-24:16

We have to deal with it.

    24:16-24:16

    Do you believe that?

    24:20-24:21

    Whatever.

    24:24-24:37

Listen, whatever it is that feeds the lust in your heart, no matter how important that thing is, it has got to go.

    24:40-24:41

    It's gotta go.

    24:47-25:18

If you're feeding your lust through your phone or maybe a tablet, smash them up. And you're like, "But Pastor Jeff, I have the newest iPhone, you know, I spent a lot of money for that." It's not worth hell. Is it your laptop? Smash it up.

    25:22-25:28

Or take your laptop to the kitchen and only use it around your family.

    25:30-25:33

You're like, "Oh, Pastor Jeff, my family's really nebby." Good.

    25:35-25:36

    So glad to hear that.

    25:38-25:39

    It's not worth hell.

    25:44-25:56

Maybe for some of you, it's your social media accounts where you're having inappropriate relationships, conversations with people online, or looking at things through those that you shouldn't be looking at.

    25:57-25:58

    Delete them.

    25:59-26:01

    Delete those social media accounts.

    26:02-26:07

You're like, "But Pastor Jeff, that's how I stay connected." Join a small group.

    26:11-26:17

You're like, "But Pastor Jeff, the social media, that's just my leisure time." Take up pickleball.

    26:19-26:20

    It's not worth hell.

    26:25-26:27

You know what, maybe we'll just take care of all this.

    26:27-26:31

Call and cancel your internet, if it's a problem.

    26:32-26:38

If it's leading you to feed this lust, Jesus says it has to go!

    26:38-26:44

And you're like, "But Pastor Jeff, I need the internet for my job." Get a new job.

    26:45-27:08

I will find you a job where you don't need the Internet because it's not worth hell. Maybe for some of you as we are approaching summer, maybe it's a membership in a public pool. Like, you know what, I go there Pastor Jim and I look at the women there and I gotta tell you, what did Jesus say?

    27:11-27:13

You've got to get extreme here, people.

    27:18-27:25

Like, "But Pastor Jeff, my pool membership, that's just kind of our thing, like we do in the summer." Swim at home.

    27:27-27:31

Like, "But I don't have a pool at my house." Do you have a bathtub?

    27:37-27:38

    It's not worth hell.

    27:40-27:45

And I know people are like, "Okay, Pastor Jeff, I hear what you're saying, "but I'm gonna be honest with you.

    27:47-27:53

"It's gonna be kind of embarrassing "to have to explain to people "why I smashed my phone and canceled my internet.

    27:54-27:56

"I'm gonna have to explain to people why I did that.

    27:57-28:22

"That's kind of embarrassing." I'll tell you what's gonna be more embarrassing than that is you not cutting off your sin, And someday you're gonna stand before God and God's going to say, "Do you remember the strangest Mother's Day sermon you've ever heard?" Why didn't you listen?

    28:23-28:25

Why did you despise my word?

    28:27-28:33

Why did you think following me was not worth cutting off the stuff that keeps you from following me with your whole heart?

    28:34-28:35

Why did you find me not worthy?

    28:40-28:49

Notice Jesus says, "It's better, it is better to lose your eye, lose your hand.

    28:50-28:54

It's better." What's better than going to hell?

    28:57-28:59

    Literally anything.

    29:02-29:08

Everything you have to lose for the sake of your soul is going to be worth it.

    29:12-29:14

    Romans 13-14.

    29:16-29:16

    Same thing.

    29:17-29:18

    Paul's saying the same thing.

    29:19-29:23

Maybe not in as graphic terms as Jesus, but it's the same thing.

    29:23-29:31

He says, "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires.

    29:33-29:34

    Make no provision.

    29:36-29:43

Take drastic measures to cut off anything that feeds the flesh.

    29:46-29:48

It's like that old story I heard.

    29:50-29:51

    An old metaphor.

    29:53-29:58

Maybe you've heard about the guy, He had a white dog and a gray dog.

    30:00-30:07

And every time he put food out for them, the gray dog would whoop up the white dog, take all the food.

    30:09-30:10

The white dog would get none.

    30:12-30:17

After a while, the white dog not eating got weaker and weaker and weaker.

    30:17-30:20

And the gray dog getting all the food got stronger and stronger and stronger.

    30:21-30:38

guy said, "I gotta do something about this." So he put both the dogs on a leash, and for a month he only fed the white dog.

    30:41-31:11

This isn't a real story, by the way. Don't call PETA. All right? But he only fed the white dog, the gray dog barely surviving. But after that time of only feeding the white dog and not the gray dog when he let them off the leash, now the white dog was strong because it was the one that got fed. And the gray dog was weak because it was the one that got starved.

    31:13-31:18

And I think you see the obvious application.

    31:21-31:24

The dog you feed is going to be the dominant dog.

    31:27-31:30

And the dog you starve is going to be the weak dog.

    31:32-31:36

See in this analogy, the white dog represents walking by the Spirit.

    31:38-31:40

The gray dog represents walking in the flesh.

    31:46-31:53

I think some of you are so weak because you're not feeding the Spirit, so to speak.

    31:55-31:57

    You're not into word.

    31:57-31:58

    You're not worshiping.

    32:00-32:00

    You're not praying.

    32:02-32:03

    You're not in fellowship.

    32:05-32:08

You're not listening to good biblical podcasts.

    32:11-32:12

    You're starving that.

    32:15-32:17

When instead you need to be starving the flesh.

    32:18-32:21

Make no provision for the flesh.

    32:22-32:26

Starve the adulterous heart by making no provision for it.

    32:27-32:33

Whichever dog you feed is going to be the dog that is strong.

    32:34-32:38

The dog that you don't feed is the dog that gets weak.

    32:41-32:48

And you're like, man, Pastor Jeff, this sounds impossible.

    32:52-32:54

    Oh, it is, absolutely.

    32:55-32:58

That's why, can we put Romans 13 back up there, please?

    32:58-32:59

    It is impossible.

    33:00-33:14

Hence, the first phrase in this verse, "Put on the Lord Jesus Christ." See, reformation is not going to work.

    33:17-33:25

If your goal here is to just try to clean up your act, you're not going to get very far.

    33:26-33:27

    You need transformation.

    33:29-33:35

You need the life of Christ in us to be able to make these choices.

    33:37-33:44

Oh, and by the way, earlier we read, well, 1 Corinthians 6, we read verses nine and 10.

    33:45-33:49

I'd like to go back and I'd like to look at the very next verse.

    33:50-33:53

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?

    33:54-34:30

Do not be deceived, neither the sexually immoral nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." But look at verse 11, "And such were some of you, that you were washed, you were sanctified, You were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, by the Spirit of our God.

    34:33-34:43

I just want to ask you today, are you an "are" or are you a "were"?

    34:44-34:52

Because today, today could be the most important day of your life, because today you can become I'm a worm.

    34:54-34:56

I'd like you to bow your heads as the worship team makes their way back up.

    34:58-35:00

I'd just like you to bow your heads.

    35:02-35:03

    And close your eyes.

    35:04-35:06

Look, this is a between you and God thing here, alright?

    35:13-35:17

There are some of you that have been trapped because you don't know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

    35:18-35:26

You don't have the power or resources this sin because you're living in the flesh, not by the power of His Holy Spirit, because you don't know.

    35:30-35:35

Today can be the day that you receive Him.

    35:35-35:36

    And you know what?

    35:36-35:37

We're baptizing in the next service.

    35:38-35:46

Pastor Taylor would be thrilled to be able to baptize you because you've repented from your sin and turned to Jesus Christ.

    35:52-36:52

But if you, heads bowed, eyes closed, if you're sitting here and you're like, "You know what, Pastor, I am a believer in Jesus Christ, but I'm honestly, I'm stuck in this sin." I just want to ask you, Christian stuck in this sin, why in the world would you indulge sin that Jesus died for. Today, Christian, you need to repent. Today, Christian, you need to do some cutting. Father in heaven, I just simply ask today that you open up the eyes of our hearts that we don't look at this sin from a worldly perspective because the world celebrates it. Father, let us see this sin from your perspective. It's a horrible sin.

    36:56-37:43

Father, let us see the consequences that Jesus laid out for us. There is eternal separation from you for the heart that chooses to live in lust instead of walking by the Spirit. Father, I pray that you would give us the wisdom, you would give us the strength, and you would give us the faith to be able to cut some things today. It's ultimately going to bless us to be free from this bondage, but the end goal of all things, Father, is for the glory of your name.

    37:44-37:59

So, Father, I pray that you would glorify your name through a work of your Holy Spirit, bringing people to you in repentance and bringing your people back from a willing bondage to sin.

    38:01-38:03

    We praise you, Father.

    38:04-38:08

Let our life, our very life be an act of worship.

    38:11-38:15

In the way we repent, we pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

To turn your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5 verses 21 through 26 Matthew chapter 5 verses 21 through 26 You know, we live in a culture that is absolutely obsessed with murder There are dozens and dozens of true crime podcasts that delve into the nitty-gritty details of the worst crimes Imaginable who has ever listened to a true crime podcast? No shame. Just asking There are seemingly thousands and thousands of TV shows that are centered around murder investigations.

    00:35-00:37

Let me just list a few.

    00:38-00:50

Blue Bloods, Only Murders in the Building, Criminal Minds, Chicago PD, Sherlock, Bones, Castle, The Rookie, Longmire, Columbo, Psych, Monk, Murder, She Wrote, Diagnosis, Murder.

    00:50-00:56

Then there are the franchises that have spun out an endless amount of added-on shows, right?

    00:56-01:26

Law & Order, Law & Order Special Victims Unit, Law & Order Criminal Intent, Law & Order LA, Law & Order Trial by Jury, Law & Order True Crime, Law & Order Organized Crime, NCIS, NCIS Origins, NCIS Los Angeles, NCIS Hawaii, NCIS New Orleans, NCIS Sydney, CSI, CSI Miami, CSI New York, CSI Los Angeles, CSI Vegas, CSI Cyber, CSI Sheboygan, CSI Wexford.

    01:27-01:27

    Oh, okay, wait.

    01:28-01:28

    (audience laughing)

    01:28-01:33

Those last two don't actually exist, but the amount they're, at the rate they're pumping out these spin-offs, you never really know.

    01:34-01:42

But millions of people tune into these kind of shows every single week to watch fictional murderers face justice.

    01:43-01:50

And on top of these podcasts and TV shows, we even play a board game with children that is all about murder.

    01:51-01:55

And that board game is, who has ever played Clue at some point in their lives?

    01:55-01:57

Okay, I don't want you to explain the basic premise, right?

    01:58-02:04

Okay, three to six players, you're all trapped in a mansion and one of you murdered Mr. Bodie who owned the mansion.

    02:04-02:11

Was it Miss Scarlet, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White, Mr. Green, Mrs. Peacock, or Professor Plum?

    02:11-02:21

The whole purpose of the game is to figure out who is the murderer, what is the murderer weapon, and what is the location of the killing.

    02:21-02:23

Again, this is a game for children.

    02:24-02:31

But the game can end with an accusation like this, Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with a candlestick.

    02:32-02:42

Maybe you loved playing this game growing up because you like to solve the mystery, assign the blame for murder, and point the finger at made-up characters.

    02:43-02:50

But what if I were to tell you that every single person in this room is guilty of murder.

    02:52-02:57

This isn't my opinion, it's not a suspicion, a hunch, or an unfounded accusation.

    02:58-03:01

This is a clear and simple fact from the mouth of our Lord.

    03:02-03:07

According to Jesus Christ, we are all Colonel Mustard in the conservatory with a candlestick.

    03:09-03:15

And you may be thinking, "Taylor, I don't know about the person next to me, but I have certainly never murdered anyone in cold blood.

    03:16-03:28

Well, you may be innocent of physically murdering, but there is no wiggling out of the reality that you are guilty of spiritually murdering in your heart by hating others.

    03:29-03:33

And again, I know that some of you may be resisting what I'm saying already.

    03:34-03:36

You think to yourself, I don't hate anyone.

    03:37-03:39

    I am pleasant with everyone.

    03:40-03:43

I mean, sure, there are some people I intensely dislike.

    03:43-03:46

There are some people I vent about constantly.

    03:47-03:52

There are some people I avoid at all costs, and if I saw them in the grocery store, I would run in the opposite direction.

    03:52-03:53

    But hey, that's different.

    03:55-03:56

    Is it different?

    03:58-04:05

Maybe you are dressing up your hatred to make it look nice and acceptable, when it is actually cruel and dishonoring to the Lord.

    04:07-04:12

No matter who you are, how nice you may appear, you are not exempt from hatred.

    04:14-04:20

'Cause you have to understand that murder is not just an action, it is a state of heart and mind.

    04:21-04:28

We have been studying the Sermon on the Mount since February and we are in the second section of our study, the heart of the law.

    04:29-04:39

Last week, Pastor Jeff taught that Jesus Christ didn't come to abolish the law, but to perfectly fulfill it through his life, death, and resurrection.

    04:39-04:44

And throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus demonstrates that the law is not skin deep.

    04:44-04:49

It actually drills down deep within you to your heart.

    04:50-04:53

Jesus cares about who you are on the inside.

    04:54-04:59

He is far more interested in the internal than the external.

    04:59-05:15

In Matthew chapter 5 verses 21 through 26, Jesus exposes your greatest desires, fears, and innermost feelings which you try to keep hidden away from others.

    05:15-05:22

Jesus pulls your anger into the light to show you how truly ugly, subtle, and destructive it actually is.

    05:23-05:26

Jesus doesn't do this to humiliate you.

    05:26-05:28

He does this to help you.

    05:29-05:34

Jesus doesn't do this to condemn you, but to change you from the inside out.

    05:34-05:37

Because hatred cannot be allowed to fester.

    05:38-05:42

It will hollow you out on the inside and it will hurt everyone around you.

    05:43-05:47

So how do you stop hatred from growing in your heart?

    05:47-05:54

Well our passage for this morning offers four methods of extermination that will keep the infection from spreading.

    05:55-06:05

Before we cover those, let's go to the Lord Please pray for me that I will faithfully proclaim God's word, and I will pray for you that you will joyfully receive God's word.

    06:13-06:16

Father, we thank you for this most important appointment of the week.

    06:16-06:24

We gather together as your people to worship you, to encourage one another, and to sit under the proclamation of your word.

    06:25-06:30

Lord, I thank you that you watch over your word to perform it and that your word accomplishes every purpose for which you send it out.

    06:30-06:35

I pray this morning that you would do your work in our hearts and lives.

    06:35-06:37

We ask all this in Jesus' name, amen.

    06:38-06:41

All right, so how do you stop hatred from growing in your heart?

    06:42-06:46

The first method of extermination, by putting it to death when it first appears.

    06:47-06:51

By putting it to death when it first appears.

    06:54-06:56

    Let's read verses 21 through 22.

    06:57-07:03

Jesus says, "You have heard that it was said "to those of old, you shall not murder, "and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.

    07:04-07:16

"But I say to you that everyone who is angry "with his brother will be liable to judgment." So Jesus kicks off a pattern that we see six times in Matthew chapter five.

    07:16-07:20

You have heard that it was said, but I say to you.

    07:21-07:26

And at first glance, it may look like Jesus is changing one of the six commandments.

    07:27-07:32

It may look like he is erasing the original meaning and coming up with something brand new.

    07:33-07:39

But as Pastor Jeff said last week, Jesus came not to lessen the law, but to elevate it.

    07:40-07:47

Jesus is not changing the sixth commandment, he is simply revealing something that has always been within it, but has been ignored.

    07:48-07:57

He is not contradicting God's word, He is contradicting the Pharisee and scribe's incomplete interpretation of God's word.

    07:59-08:10

The religious leaders of Jesus' day thought and taught that the sixth commandment of you shall not murder only applied to the physical acts of homicide and manslaughter.

    08:11-08:16

They put this commandment into a box and ignored its deeper meaning.

    08:16-08:18

And here is the heart of the sixth commandment.

    08:19-08:26

Do not give yourself over to unrighteous anger, which leads to the act of unjustly ending someone's life.

    08:27-08:30

Anger is the first domino in that chain reaction.

    08:31-08:38

The religious leaders limited the scope of God's command and the process they limited its impact.

    08:39-08:45

By viewing the sixth commandment in this way, a religious leader could look at himself and say, "Hey, I am perfectly keeping this commandment.

    08:45-08:47

"I have never clubbed someone over the head.

    08:47-08:50

I never pushed my neighbor off a tall building in a fit of rage.

    08:51-08:52

God must be so proud of me.

    08:53-08:57

But internally they are killing people by despising them.

    08:57-09:01

Despising tax collectors, sinners, and Gentiles.

    09:03-09:12

In this passage, Jesus corrects the massive oversight of the men who should know the law better than anyone else, but have missed the entire point.

    09:12-09:14

    They have missed the heart.

    09:15-09:20

Jesus is saying, don't think you're safe and sound because you have no bodies buried in your backyard.

    09:21-09:32

You are on the hook for a serious crime and heading for serious consequences if you have hatred and anger and bitterness buried in your heart.

    09:34-09:39

It's especially egregious to be angry with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.

    09:40-09:41

    Why is that?

    09:42-09:47

You know, as a dad, it pains me to watch or read news stories about kids being bullied.

    09:49-09:54

But do you know what would be worse than watching strangers be mistreated?

    09:56-09:59

Finding out that one of my own kids is being bullied.

    10:01-10:02

Do you know what would be the worst of all?

    10:03-10:08

Discovering that one of my kids hates and actively tries to hurt his or her sibling.

    10:10-10:15

It grieves the heart of God to watch his children despise and attack one another.

    10:17-10:19

And John talks about this in his first epistle.

    10:20-10:24

He says, "Everyone who hates his brother is a what?

    10:25-10:40

"A murderer, and you know that no murderer "has eternal life abiding in him." At this point, you may be frustrated, thinking, wait, so you're saying I can never be angry with anybody, especially if he or she is a Christian.

    10:40-10:41

    How is that possible?

    10:42-10:47

To be clear, Jesus isn't saying that anger is always sinful.

    10:48-10:49

    God gets angry.

    10:50-10:52

God hates sin and what it causes.

    10:53-10:56

Jesus got angry throughout the Gospels.

    10:56-11:05

As a human, it is impossible for you to not feel feelings of betrayal, of annoyance and frustration.

    11:06-11:13

Jesus isn't condemning anger in general, he is condemning a very specific kind of anger.

    11:14-11:17

In this passage, the word for anger in the Greek is orgizo.

    11:18-11:27

And this is a fuming, a boiling anger that is nurtured and intensified like a pot of water on a stove.

    11:28-11:35

You keep dialing up the temperature, keep dialing up the intensity until it overflows and scalds people.

    11:36-11:39

This kind of anger twists your heart.

    11:41-11:43

It distorts how you view other people.

    11:43-11:48

You may even daydream about bad things happening to this person.

    11:50-11:59

You may want this person to get what's coming, to get what they deserve, to be publicly humiliated, and to feel the same exact pain that you feel.

    12:01-12:05

When you hate someone, You are communicating this message to the Lord.

    12:06-12:12

Lord, I don't care if that person dies, and I want them out of my life for good.

    12:15-12:21

Now you would never say that out loud, but that's what you're feeling in your heart when you harbor bitterness.

    12:23-12:29

Because that person is dead to you when you never ever want to see him or her ever again.

    12:30-12:33

In your book, it's like they've been wiped out of existence.

    12:34-12:37

It's like they've fallen off the face of this earth.

    12:39-12:41

That kind of anger is a spark.

    12:42-12:46

That can be snuffed out or fanned into flame.

    12:46-12:55

It's challenging to put to death in its infancy, but it's way harder to kill once it's fully grown and is out of control.

    12:56-13:00

And this principle holds true in every other area of life.

    13:01-13:10

If you had gone to the dentist when you first noticed that tooth pain, you could have avoided the unpleasant and very expensive root canal.

    13:11-13:17

That small leak in your attic would have been much more manageable whenever it was a small drip.

    13:18-13:22

But now every single time that it rained, it's like a waterfall in your attic.

    13:24-13:34

Taking care of your yard would have been much easier You pulled weeds as they popped up, but after months and months and years of neglect, there are weeds everywhere.

    13:36-13:40

In those moments, you noticed a problem, but you did nothing about it.

    13:42-13:46

You stuffed it down instead of honestly addressing the issue.

    13:48-14:06

Never turn a blind eye to your sin, especially when it comes to unrighteous anger when you see that root of bitterness pop up, be relentless in pulling it out and throwing it away instead of giving it room to breathe and to grow.

    14:09-14:14

When that urge to mentally curse someone out in your mind pops up, don't entertain it.

    14:15-14:18

Don't go down that ungodly route.

    14:18-14:22

Instead, choke out those thoughts with the word of God.

    14:22-14:26

If that person is a believer, pray for their sanctification.

    14:26-14:30

If that person is not a Christian, pray for their salvation.

    14:32-14:44

When a family member or friend fails you, and trust me, they will fail you, don't stew on the offense and tally up all the ways that person has let you down in the past.

    14:44-14:50

Instead, run to the only one who has never and will never let you down.

    14:50-14:55

Go to God the Father so that you can choose patience and gentleness.

    14:55-14:58

    instead of pettiness and retaliation.

    15:00-15:08

When the desire to believe the worst about someone in this church enters your mind, willingly decide to believe the best until proven wrong.

    15:10-15:16

Turn down the stove of your anger before it hurts you and everyone around you.

    15:19-15:21

How do you stop hatred from growing in your heart?

    15:21-15:27

second method of extermination, by refusing to kill others with destructive words.

    15:28-15:31

By refusing to kill others with destructive words.

    15:35-15:41

So Jesus moves on from what's in your heart to what comes out of your mouth at the end of verse 22.

    15:41-15:51

He says this, "Whoever insults his brother "will be liable to the council, "and whoever says you fool will be liable the hell of fire.

    15:53-15:55

Maybe this seems over the top to you.

    15:55-16:03

You may be thinking, really Jesus, going before the Supreme Court and being thrown into hell for insulting and slander, isn't that a bit severe?

    16:05-16:08

Well, maybe you won't think that if you understand what these insults actually mean.

    16:08-16:14

That word for insult in the Greek is raka, which means empty-headed or worthless.

    16:15-16:20

And that word for fool is moros, from which we get which English word do you think?

    16:21-16:22

    Moron.

    16:24-16:25

That's not just a cute, funny word.

    16:26-16:30

The New Testament uses that word to describe those who are outside the kingdom of God.

    16:31-16:43

So by labeling someone as raka and moros, you are saying you are a worthless and stupid waste of space with nothing of value to offer anyone so you can go straight to hell for all I care.

    16:46-16:51

True Christians cannot lose their salvation by using their mouths for evil.

    16:53-17:04

But a person whose life is marked by this kind of vile speech should question the genuineness of his or her faith and status in the family of God.

    17:05-17:11

How can you flip people off in traffic throughout the week and then passionately raise your arms in worship on Sunday?

    17:13-17:21

How can you unapologetically scream at your wife and your kids and then use that same mouth to pray to a heavenly father who you are nothing like.

    17:22-17:33

How can you day after day at work belittle your colleagues, your coworkers, your employees, and then go to small group and claim that you're a bold witness for Christ?

    17:34-17:43

How can you ruin the reputation of others with slander and then describe your reputation as above reproach in God honoring?

    17:44-17:51

You cannot habitually kill others with your words and claim to love Jesus with your whole heart.

    17:52-17:57

Your words say way more about you than the person you are speaking against.

    18:00-18:04

Please do not underestimate the impact and influence of your words.

    18:05-18:15

You can use your mouth to point someone to Christ or away from Christ, to smash them into a million pieces are to help put them back together again.

    18:16-18:22

You can use your mouth to give someone hope or to take away the little hope that someone has.

    18:24-18:30

Listen to what the Apostle Paul has to say about how you should and shouldn't speak in Ephesians 4.29.

    18:30-18:43

"Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, "but only such as good for building up, "as fits the occasion that it may give grace "to those who hear." No corrupting talk.

    18:44-18:48

Corrupting brings the mental picture of something that is rotten and moldy.

    18:49-18:59

Imagine every single time you use your words in a negative way that this gross odor ekes out of your mouth and grosses out everyone around you.

    19:01-19:08

When my wife and I were first married, we lived in a garage apartment above the house of a very nice Christian couple and their son.

    19:08-19:10

We have almost no complaints about them.

    19:10-19:20

great family, very kind to us, but we had one small complaint. Once or twice a week they would make a meal that smelled horrible.

    19:22-19:42

And the smell would go from the kitchen into the vents and finally into our apartment. I can't tell you how many candles we lit, how many balls of Febreze we sprayed to try to fight off this odor. And somehow those defenses make it worse, doesn't it? The smells kind of mixed together to create a horrible uber smell.

    19:44-19:48

And it's been 11 years, I swear to you, I can still smell this meal in my house sometimes.

    19:49-19:59

I know that's not possible, and my wife tells me I'm imagining it, but that smell so offended my nose that it haunts me in every season of life.

    20:00-20:04

You may be thinking, okay, what's the point of this random gross story?

    20:04-20:11

Your corrupting words have the power to linger and haunt people for the rest of their lives.

    20:13-20:22

If I passed around a mic this morning and asked everyone to share the most hurtful things that have been said to or about you, there wouldn't be a dry eye in this room.

    20:25-20:30

Now I want you to think about some of the most hurtful things you've ever said to or about someone.

    20:35-20:36

    Was it worth it?

    20:38-20:39

Do you stand by what you said?

    20:41-20:42

    Or do you regret it?

    20:44-20:46

If given a do over, would you say it all again?

    20:47-20:48

Or would you keep your mouth shut?

    20:51-20:55

Remember your answers to those questions when you were tempted to lash out at others with your words.

    20:57-21:02

Recognize that you can never take your words back no matter how much you wish that you could.

    21:05-21:07

How do you stop hatred from growing in your heart?

    21:08-21:12

Third method of extermination, by seeking after immediate reconciliation.

    21:13-21:15

    By seeking after immediate reconciliation.

    21:18-21:26

So in verses 23 through 24, Jesus switches gears to focus on how you should address the anger of others when you are at fault.

    21:27-21:29

Let's see what he has to say about next steps.

    21:30-21:38

Verse 23, so if you were offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go.

    21:39-21:43

First be reconciled to your brother and then come and offer your gift.

    21:45-21:55

Jesus places a high premium on resolving relational issues quickly and pursuing after reconciliation as soon as possible.

    21:56-22:02

He even puts it above sacrifice, which to Jews in the first century would have been unthinkable.

    22:03-22:13

Making sacrifices is expected and commanded by God, but Jesus says it's more important to be at peace with others around you.

    22:14-22:22

He's saying, if you're making your sacrifice, leave it there, leave, go put this issue to bed and then come back to finish your sacrifice.

    22:24-22:34

This would be similar to us hearing, Listen, if you're shopping at Giant Eagle, leave your cart at the register and get out of there.

    22:34-22:41

If you're pumping gas, jump into your car and speed away and don't worry if the gas nozzle's dragging on the road behind you.

    22:42-22:48

If you're worshiping a church on Sunday, stop singing and track that person down.

    22:49-22:51

    Resolve that unfinished business.

    22:54-22:55

Do you have unfinished business right now?

    22:57-22:59

Do you need to ask for forgiveness?

    23:03-23:08

Maybe you need to step out, make that call, send that text, or even speed out of the parking lot.

    23:09-23:10

If that's you, do it right now.

    23:14-23:15

    Maybe you don't want to.

    23:18-23:23

Sadly, so many of us demand apologies from others, but we're so bad at apologizing when we're wrong.

    23:24-23:25

    Why is that?

    23:26-23:29

    because apologizing requires humility.

    23:30-23:34

You have to make yourself small and put yourself at the mercy of someone else.

    23:35-23:37

Do we naturally want to do that?

    23:38-23:43

None of us do, but it's commanded by our God and it is expected.

    23:45-23:49

It's way easier to cut ties and run than it is to admit your faults.

    23:49-23:53

That's why there are so many marriages that end in divorce.

    23:54-24:28

That's why there are so many friendships are broken. That's why so many professing Christians leave their current church to go to another church down the street. Well time for a fresh start. No one at this new church knows my dirty laundry or my history. Yet not yet. Give it a few weeks or months you'll be looking for a new church yet again. It is far more appealing to the flesh to be totally unknown and completely unconfronted than than it is to be fully known and lovingly confronted.

    24:29-24:32

Please stop pretending because Jesus is not fooled.

    24:33-24:39

Stop running away from those you've hurt because your problems will just follow you wherever you end up.

    24:41-24:43

Do not be lazy and passive about reconciliation.

    24:45-24:48

Don't just think, yeah, yeah, I'll put that on my to-do list and get to it at some point.

    24:48-24:52

No, Jesus is saying, rip up your to-do list because nothing else matters.

    24:53-24:59

Do whatever is necessary to attempt to stifle that anger that is between you and the other person.

    25:02-25:05

How do you stop hatred from growing in your heart?

    25:05-25:09

Final method of extermination, by remembering what's at stake.

    25:10-25:12

    By remembering what's at stake.

    25:16-25:23

Maybe you're still unmoved by Jesus' call to crush hatred and pursue after restoration.

    25:24-25:28

You know what God is calling you to do, but you just don't want to do it.

    25:28-25:32

You don't have any plans to make any changes or say sorry anytime soon.

    25:33-25:35

Well, thankfully, Jesus knows how stubborn you are.

    25:36-25:37

He knows how stubborn I am.

    25:37-25:40

So he follows up his command with a very stern warning.

    25:41-25:44

In verses 25 to 26, he says this.

    25:45-25:55

"Come to terms quickly with your accuser "while you were going with him to court, "lest your accuser hands you over to the judge "and the judge to the guard and you be put in prison.

    25:55-26:06

"Truly I say to you, you will never get out "until you have paid the last penny." Let me bring this first century illustration into the 21st century.

    26:06-26:11

Imagine that you and your neighbor are fighting over a property line dispute.

    26:12-26:17

And during one argument, you get so angry that you viciously attack him.

    26:18-26:23

You are 100% guilty and there are witnesses to back up your neighbor's testimony.

    26:25-26:31

Your neighbor threatens to call the cops, to press charges, and sue you if you do not apologize.

    26:33-26:35

But in that moment, you don't want to apologize.

    26:35-26:38

You wanna defend yourself, you wanna fight against your neighbor.

    26:38-26:42

You don't want him or her to have the satisfaction of beating you.

    26:44-26:46

But let's follow that to its logical conclusion.

    26:47-26:56

Cops come, you're arrested, you're put on trial, and you have to go to prison and stay there until you are let out.

    26:57-27:02

And even then, you still have a lot of legal fees and you still have to pay out the lawsuit.

    27:02-27:06

Let me ask you, is there any upside to that option, option A?

    27:07-27:07

    What do we think?

    27:08-27:09

    No, it's all horrible.

    27:10-27:11

But thankfully, there's an option B.

    27:12-27:14

Throw yourself at the mercy of your neighbor.

    27:15-27:19

Ask for their forgiveness and seek after an agreeable solution.

    27:20-27:25

If you do that, your future is no longer filled with orange jumpsuits and public showers.

    27:28-27:34

You may be thinking, well, thanks for the random legal advice, I guess, but what does this have to do with me?

    27:36-27:37

    Well, here's the point.

    27:38-27:41

Hatred is a prison that you willingly lock yourself into.

    27:42-27:45

Hatred is a prison that you willingly lock yourself into.

    27:46-27:54

If you give yourself over to it, if you refuse to repent, there will be consequences in this life.

    27:55-27:59

You will become very lonely and unpleasant to be around.

    28:00-28:06

You'll be known as the cranky guy or lady at church that everyone wants to love but doesn't know how to.

    28:07-28:09

You'll be viewed as the human cactus.

    28:09-28:15

Everyone tries to hug you and bring you closer, but you just push them away and hurt them with jabs.

    28:17-28:20

You will be trapped in a loveless marriage.

    28:22-28:27

Your children will wither away under your harshness and constant criticism.

    28:28-28:32

And you'll wonder one day why they don't visit anymore or call you to check in.

    28:34-28:42

Your friends will drop away like flies, one by one by one, because they're tired of you picking fights and refusing to apologize.

    28:42-28:46

Let me ask you, is that the direction you want your life to take?

    28:47-28:49

Is that where you want to end up?

    28:52-29:00

In these final two verses, Jesus is focusing on the penalties you will face right now if you wrong others and never seek forgiveness.

    29:02-29:15

But over this past week, I couldn't help but consider the eternal penalty for unrepentant hatred and a continual refusal to seek after the forgiveness of Christ.

    29:17-29:24

Paul is crystal clear in 1 Corinthians 6.10 that revilers, slanderers will not inherit the kingdom of God.

    29:26-29:31

As I said earlier, some of you need to do some serious self-examination.

    29:31-29:44

If you relentlessly feed this anger in your heart and it pours out from your mouth and through your actions, you may need to answer this really difficult question, am I truly saved?

    29:46-29:49

Because true Christians choose to love instead of hate.

    29:50-29:56

A true follower of Christ wants to repent of sin, not wallow in sin.

    29:57-30:03

Someone who has experienced the forgiveness of Christ wants to extend that to others instead of withhold it.

    30:03-30:23

Those who have been changed from the inside out say, "I'm sorry, will you forgive me?" Not, "I'm sorry, but," or "I didn't do anything wrong." Listen, none of us are perfect in any of these areas, but you should be making progress day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year.

    30:24-30:30

Are you kinder, more loving, more forgiving now than when you first came to Christ?

    30:32-30:37

And if the answer is no, maybe you never truly came to Christ in the first place.

    30:39-30:48

If your honest answer to the question of am I truly saved is no, then your future is far more terrifying than any earthly jail or prison.

    30:50-30:56

You are looking down the barrel of an eternity of being sentenced to a prison that is inescapable once you are there.

    30:57-31:00

In hell, no one is released early or given visitation rights.

    31:03-31:04

But I have great news this morning.

    31:04-31:08

You don't have to be sentenced to that kind of eternity.

    31:08-31:11

There is still time to trust in Christ today.

    31:12-31:15

You don't need to carry that hatred or bitterness any longer.

    31:16-31:20

Those burdens will sink you both now and forever if you let them.

    31:20-31:37

Give those burdens over to Christ, who was hated by the crowd that you could be loved by his Father, who was rejected on the cross that you could be accepted, who bore the angry wrath that you deserve so you could be declared innocent.

    31:38-31:41

Jesus Christ has open arms this morning.

    31:43-31:44

He's calling you to run to him.

    31:46-31:47

    He is ready and willing.

    31:49-31:54

Are you ready and willing to run to him and accept all that he has to offer?

    31:56-32:06

Let nothing hold you back from Christ because he will withhold nothing from you once you come to him with a sincere faith and genuine repentance.

    32:09-32:21

If your honest answer to the question of "Am I saved?" is yes, but you still wrestle with holding on to resentment and burning with anger, I have a few final words of encouragement for you.

    32:22-32:26

You may have dug yourself into a pit of your own making.

    32:27-32:34

You keep digging and digging and digging with obsessive thoughts, unkind words, and stubbornness.

    32:35-32:40

But please listen to me, you only need to stay in that hole as long as you want to.

    32:41-32:44

Nothing and no one is keeping you there besides yourself.

    32:45-32:52

If you want to get to a better place, Get over yourself and admit your neediness.

    32:52-32:55

Admit that you need God's help.

    32:57-33:00

Remind yourself of the truth instead of buying into your own lies.

    33:01-33:06

You should hold no grudges because God holds no grudges against you.

    33:07-33:11

You have nothing to prove to anyone because Jesus Christ already approves of you.

    33:12-33:48

You have no reason to repay evil for evil because the Bible says that vengeance belongs to the Lord. You have no defense for your hatred because you have received the greatest love imaginable. Let's spend some time with the Lord in prayer. Please close your eyes and bow your heads. Use this time to confess your sin to the Lord, to acknowledge how much you need Him to change.

    33:50-33:51

    Stop putting on a show.

    33:52-33:55

Be honest with your Father, because He already knows what you're struggling with.

    33:58-34:02

The first step in finding a solution to your problem is admitting that you even have a problem.

    34:04-34:06

Don't worry about what's for lunch.

    34:06-34:10

Don't worry about your busy day tomorrow, how your kids are doing in the back.

    34:11-34:12

    Do business with God.

    34:21-34:25

Father, we come before you to confess our sin.

    34:30-34:36

Lord, all of us struggle with this in some way, at some level, whether we want to admit it or not.

    34:38-34:59

Lord, if there is someone in this room doesn't know you, Lord, I pray that today would be the day of salvation. Today would be the day where they run to you and ask for forgiveness for the very first time. For the rest of us, Lord, Lord, help us to recognize that we are already forgiven of our hatred. That the eternal penalty for our sin has been taken away.

    35:02-35:13

But Lord, we are called to love you so much that we must hate our sin. Lord, help Help us to hate how we sin against you, rather than hate others.

    35:14-35:19

Where we ask for your power, we ask for your strength to grow, to mature.

    35:20-35:26

I pray that we'd walk out of this room as lighter people after giving you the burden of our hatred and anger.

    35:27-35:29

I ask all this in Jesus' name, amen.

The Place of the Law

Introduction:

Why Should the Old Testament Matter to Me? (Matthew 5:17-20)

  1. Because That's Where We Learn About Jesus. (Matt 5:17)

John 5:39You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me...

Luke 24:27And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

  2. Because It's Still Relevant. (Matt 5:18)
  3. Because You Will Be Evaluated Based On What You Do With It. (Matt 5:19)

Romans 8:2-4For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

  4. Because Your Salvation Depends On It. (Matt 5:20)

Let's open up those Bibles to Matthew chapter five.

    00:08-00:15

This past week at Owen's doctor appointment, Owen's my son for those of you who don't know, my son's doctor's appointment.

    00:19-00:30

The doctor was talking about how many doctors try to make a name for themselves by promoting some new controversial thing.

    00:31-00:32

You know what I'm talking about?

    00:33-00:39

He was saying, you know, if you just practice straightforward medicine, well, that's not very exciting.

    00:40-01:04

But if you have some controversial angle, you know, maybe some crazy diet or some supplement that's going to be the cure all or some new treatment that nobody's ever heard of, You know, you jump on some kind of a fad, but you gotta have some kind of a twist, some kind of a gimmick.

    01:06-01:14

That's how a lot of doctors get popular because he said the fundamentals just aren't very exciting.

    01:16-01:22

People love the new trendy thing and it makes doctors popular.

    01:24-01:27

And as he was talking about that, I thought, you know what?

    01:29-01:31

That happens in the church, doesn't it?

    01:34-01:39

Just preaching the Bible straightforwardly isn't exciting enough.

    01:40-01:51

So many preachers try to give some new angle on things or they try to make something very controversial, very trendy, you know what I'm talking about?

    01:51-02:00

There was a wave of evangelicals years ago that jumped on this trend that there is no hell, denying the doctrine of hell.

    02:01-02:03

And there were people that jumped onto that.

    02:04-02:12

And there are some pastors that think that you're going to be edgy and controversial and popular if you swear in your sermons.

    02:15-02:22

Or if you are explicit in sexual content in your sermon.

    02:24-02:31

Yeah, that's trendy and that's edgy and people are gonna think I'm cool and that's gonna make me popular.

    02:33-02:42

Everything from modalism, you know, denying the Trinity, to some churches that say, hey, you know, we're not just gonna preach the Bible straightforwardly.

    02:42-02:46

Our church is gonna have a really strong patriotic flavor to it.

    02:48-02:54

I saw one recently, Pastor Rich actually sent me Here's a trend in some churches now.

    02:56-02:57

    Roller coasters.

    02:59-03:04

There's a company that makes these little roller, when I say roller coasters, don't think Cedar Point.

    03:04-03:05

    Ah, no, no, no.

    03:05-03:08

This is some little, it's like a kiddie ride that comes out.

    03:08-03:12

And then we get this sermon series called Roller Coaster because life is a roller coaster.

    03:13-03:20

And in these videos, these pastors were riding out on these roller coasters that were barely moving and they're all waving.

    03:20-03:53

(imitates a high- Jesus did, and Peter did, and Paul and John.

    03:53-03:59

They were doing everything they could, this preacher said, to unhitch themselves from the Old Testament.

    04:02-04:05

Well, that idea is nothing new.

    04:06-04:19

In fact, when we get to this section here in Matthew chapter five, you see Jesus knew that that is exactly what the Jews thought that Jesus was doing.

    04:20-04:45

thought Jesus was bringing something new and trendy. They thought Jesus was unhitching from the Old Testament. And to be fair, I can kind of see why they thought that. I mean, Jesus didn't subscribe to the form of Judaism that existed in his day. We're going to talk about that here in a few minutes.

    04:47-04:50

Jesus didn't keep all of their Sabbath rules.

    04:52-04:56

And I mean, Jesus' followers, his disciples, you realize none of them were rabbis.

    04:59-05:06

And all the biggest thing though, the biggest thing that set Jesus apart was his preaching.

    05:06-05:10

Nobody ever preached like this one preached.

    05:11-05:20

So at this point in the Sermon on the Mount, they've heard the Beatitudes, They've heard the, you are the salt and the light, and they've heard this, and the Jews are sitting there going, this is wild.

    05:22-05:27

But like, is he anti, like Old Testament?

    05:28-05:32

Is he like replacing the law and the prophets?

    05:32-05:36

Is Jesus bringing something, you know, funky fresh?

    05:36-05:38

Do the kids still say funky fresh?

    05:39-05:40

    No?

    05:41-05:44

By the time I learn a new term, It's been outdated by about 12 years.

    05:45-05:55

So it was probably relevant when this was actually said, but they were like, he's bringing something funky fresh.

    05:56-06:00

Well, Jesus knew what they were thinking.

    06:00-06:07

Is this some radical hippie preacher trying to give his own little twist on things?

    06:07-06:09

    Look at verse 17.

    06:10-06:24

Jesus said, "Do not think that I have come "to abolish the law and the prophets." Now, understand, we're gonna be talking about the Old Testament today.

    06:25-06:27

They did not call it the Old Testament.

    06:28-06:30

To them, it was the scriptures.

    06:30-06:34

To them, they called it the law and the prophets.

    06:34-06:37

That's what they called, what we call the Old Testament.

    06:37-06:39

    So let's not get confused.

    06:39-06:44

When we talk about Old Testament, we're talking about the law and the prophets.

    06:45-07:10

And Jesus says, "Don't think that I've come to destroy your Old Testament." He said, "I came to fulfill it." So this need to unhitch from the Old Testament seems like a bad idea if we're going to take Jesus seriously.

    07:13-07:26

But listen, I really need you all to dial in here because this topic that we're covering today in God's Word is something that Christians get all mixed up on.

    07:26-07:35

And I know there is a high probability of me being misquoted or misunderstood as we go through this.

    07:36-07:41

Because Christians are all kinds of mixed up on this issue.

    07:42-07:46

What does the Old Testament have to do with me?

    07:46-07:49

What purpose does it have for me?

    07:50-07:52

Christians get all mixed up about that.

    07:53-08:07

And some say, well, you know what, the Old Testament, it all applies, and you're commanded to keep everything, all of the dietary laws and the washings and all of that, all the rules that we've made up for the Sabbath, you gotta keep the Sabbath.

    08:07-08:11

And some have that mindset towards the Old Testament.

    08:14-08:20

And on the other hand, there are people that say, well, the Old Testament doesn't apply to me at all.

    08:22-08:24

None of it applies, it doesn't matter.

    08:24-08:34

Look, because of Jesus, I'm a child of God and I'm forgiven, I am free in Christ and I can do whatever I want.

    08:38-08:42

Maybe you've heard the arguments from the pro-gay crowd.

    08:44-09:03

You know, anytime somebody says something about, you know, the Bible says homosexuality is a sin, the response is, well, you know, that's in the Old Testament, but did you know, you know, the Old Testament says that it's a sin to eat lobster and to get tattoos and blending certain fabrics and you do those things.

    09:04-09:04

    You heard that argument?

    09:05-09:06

And they say, no, no, no.

    09:06-09:10

You know, with Jesus, it's just about love, right?

    09:10-09:12

That's all it is in the New Testament.

    09:13-09:14

    Love is love.

    09:17-09:26

And today I just want us to take a giant step back and say, what is the place of the Old Testament for us?

    09:26-09:28

What does it mean to us?

    09:31-09:40

So I'd like you to bow your heads and I want you to please pray for me to be clear and accurate in proclaiming this very difficult passage.

    09:41-09:49

And I'm gonna pray for you to have a heart open to receive not what you think it says, but what God actually said.

    09:49-09:50

That's what we're going after here today.

    09:51-09:58

What did Jesus actually say about what we call the Old Testament?

    09:58-10:00

Let's take a moment and pray.

    10:09-10:13

Father in heaven, I pray that our number one concern is just what you said.

    10:15-10:17

And Father, you know in my heart, I have this concern.

    10:18-10:25

People are gonna walk out of here still convinced of something that's just not true biblically.

    10:25-10:30

And Father, your word changes our minds.

    10:33-10:34

And I pray that we'd all take a look.

    10:34-10:40

It doesn't matter what our favorite podcast preacher thinks and it doesn't even really matter what I think.

    10:40-10:42

What matters is what you said.

    10:44-10:47

And I pray God that that's what we're going after today.

    10:48-11:10

And for those of us that have maybe walked in here today with preconceived notions about the place of the law in the lives of believers, I pray, God, that you would, I pray that you would change our minds today in a way that greatly glorifies your name so that we can be the people that you've called us to be.

    11:11-11:13

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    11:14-11:16

And all of God's people said, amen.

    11:21-11:27

It's a very, very short sermon today, but it's a really long introduction.

    11:29-11:31

All right, so I want you to write some things down.

    11:32-11:34

Why should the Old Testament matter to me?

    11:34-11:37

Again, law and the prophets, that's what they called it.

    11:37-11:38

We call it the Old Testament.

    11:39-11:39

    It's the same thing.

    11:40-11:44

That was their scriptures in Jesus' day when he spoke these words.

    11:45-11:48

So the question, Christian, what about the Old Testament?

    11:48-11:49

What does it mean to me?

    11:50-11:51

    What's its purpose for me?

    11:52-11:53

Why should it matter to me?

    11:53-11:57

Number one, write this down, because that's where we learn about Jesus.

    11:59-12:00

    Look at verse 17.

    12:01-12:11

Again, Jesus said, "Do not think "that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets." The Old Testament.

    12:12-12:24

He said, "I have not come to abolish them, but to fulfill them." So is Jesus anti Old Testament?

    12:25-12:26

No, it's actually quite the opposite.

    12:27-12:33

Jesus said, "I came to fulfill them." What does it mean to fulfill?

    12:35-12:50

Well, some people think that fulfill means complete, as in the Old Testament was just putting the ball the tee, and Jesus came to hit the ball, and he just came to finish, to complete something.

    12:50-12:51

    Now, it's irrelevant.

    12:54-12:55

That's not exactly what it means.

    12:56-13:10

And some people think, "Well, what he's talking about is how he perfectly obeyed the Old Testament." Now, listen, he did perfectly obey the law.

    13:10-13:11

    He did.

    13:11-13:14

But that's not what he meant here.

    13:15-13:16

    Well, what did he mean?

    13:18-13:23

Fulfill literally means to carry out what was said.

    13:27-13:27

    I'm gonna say that again.

    13:27-13:30

Fulfill means to carry out what was said.

    13:30-13:44

What Jesus is saying here is this, everything that the Old Testament says, everything written in the law and the prophets, I will carry it all out.

    13:46-13:50

    That is a staggering claim.

    13:53-13:53

    Like, what do you mean?

    13:56-13:59

Well, in the book of Genesis, we find that Eve's seed will crush the serpent.

    14:00-14:01

    Jesus said, I did that.

    14:01-14:02

    We'll do that.

    14:02-14:04

Jesus is the blessing of Abraham.

    14:05-14:05

    Jesus did that.

    14:06-14:09

Jesus in the book of Exodus is the Passover lamb.

    14:09-14:11

Jesus said, I'm gonna do that.

    14:11-14:15

The book of Leviticus, we see the sacrifice and the priest.

    14:15-14:16

Jesus says, I'm gonna do that.

    14:16-14:21

In the book of Deuteronomy, there's gonna be a prophet raised like Moses.

    14:21-14:23

Jesus said, I came to do that.

    14:24-14:29

Second Samuel says that there's going to be a king in David's line that will be king forever.

    14:29-14:31

Jesus said, I came to accomplish that.

    14:32-14:36

The book of Malachi says there's gonna be a forerunner for the Messiah, John the Baptist.

    14:36-14:41

Jesus says, "Done, check, did that." Book of Micah says where the Messiah would be born.

    14:41-14:43

    Oh little town of Bethlehem.

    14:43-14:48

Jesus is like, "Yeah, I did that." Feels like Christmas, doesn't it?

    14:49-14:50

You know, like it did there for a second.

    14:51-14:55

In the book of Isaiah, the Messiah would be virgin born.

    14:55-15:02

Jesus says, "Check, light to the Gentiles, "check, did that." The book of Isaiah talks about Jesus' death and resurrection.

    15:03-15:07

Jesus is like, "I came to complete that." It talks about the kingdom of the Messiah.

    15:07-15:12

Jesus is like, "I came to do that." Book of Jeremiah talks about Jesus cleansing the temple.

    15:12-15:17

"I came to do that." Book of Zechariah, he'd be sold for 30 pieces of silver.

    15:17-15:21

Jesus said, "I came to complete that." Psalms talks about his suffering.

    15:21-15:24

Psalms talks about his ultimate reigning.

    15:24-15:41

Jesus, and there's so much more, but Jesus said, "I came to carry all of that out." And it's a staggering thing because Jesus carried out things that aren't humanly possible to fulfill.

    15:41-15:51

I've heard these knuckleheads say that Jesus was, you know, sort of, he sort of orchestrated his life in such a way that it looked like he was fulfilling Old Testament prophecies.

    15:51-15:56

But he did things nobody else could ever have any control over, like where he was born.

    15:58-16:00

Did you control where you were born?

    16:01-16:02

    Nobody has control over that.

    16:03-16:04

    Born to a virgin.

    16:05-16:06

    How he was born.

    16:06-16:08

Nobody has control over those things.

    16:09-16:12

This is the claim that Jesus is making.

    16:12-16:18

His death, his betrayal, all these things prophesied in the Old Testament.

    16:19-16:20

This is who the Christ would be.

    16:20-16:22

This is what the Messiah will do.

    16:22-16:25

Jesus is saying here, I came to do all of that.

    16:25-16:27

You think I came to destroy the law and the prophets?

    16:27-16:30

No, I came to do it.

    16:33-16:42

That's why John chapter five, Jesus said to the Jews, "You search the scriptures," meaning the Old Testament, "because you think in them, you have eternal life.

    16:42-16:51

And it is they that bear witness about me." Jesus said, "You'll find me on every page of the law and the prophets." Every page of your Old Testament.

    16:52-16:56

Luke 24, 27, post-resurrection disciples, road to Emmaus.

    16:56-17:04

It says, "Beginning with Moses and all the prophets, Jesus interpreted to them in all the scriptures, the things concerning himself.

    17:04-17:07

Wouldn't you have liked to have heard that conversation?

    17:11-17:21

So the Old Testament, long before Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were written, we learn about Jesus.

    17:21-17:22

    We learn all about him.

    17:22-17:33

In fact, the gospels and the epistles really serve to show us how Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ that's promised in the Old Testament.

    17:37-17:49

What's more, we cannot understand Jesus and we cannot understand His cross apart from the Old Testament.

    17:52-18:00

You know, just last weekend we celebrated Easter, Resurrection Day, and Good Friday.

    18:01-18:02

    And what did we say?

    18:03-18:05

We're like, "Jesus died on the cross.

    18:06-18:09

"Jesus died on the cross." And so what?

    18:11-18:13

Do you know lots of people have died on crosses?

    18:13-18:14

    Did you know that?

    18:14-18:16

That was a common form of execution.

    18:17-18:20

It wasn't like Jesus was the only one who ever died on a cross.

    18:21-18:23

    I mean, countless people did.

    18:27-18:27

    So what?

    18:30-18:37

The cross only makes sense in light of what is written in the Old Testament.

    18:40-18:43

    The law condemns sin.

    18:45-18:52

The law requires death, And Jesus paid the penalty of sin with his sacrifice.

    18:54-18:59

And if you unhitch yourself from the Old Testament, you know what Easter turns into?

    19:00-19:02

    Sentimentality, that's all it is.

    19:02-19:07

Oh, the poor innocent man, he was just doing good and they killed him.

    19:08-19:09

    That's so sad.

    19:10-19:12

It is so much more than that.

    19:14-19:17

This is the Lamb of God sacrificed on your behalf.

    19:20-19:21

    Sentimentality.

    19:23-19:27

And when we do that, we miss the glory of the cross.

    19:29-19:32

I listened to a sermon a few years ago from a very, very popular preacher.

    19:33-19:44

I'm paraphrasing here, but again, in the name of being edgy and cool, he said God broke His law because He loved us so much.

    19:44-19:51

And he gave this illustration, oh, just get your heartstrings ready 'cause they're about to get pulled, okay?

    19:51-19:58

But he says it's like a mom at a playground with her kid and her kid falls and gets hurt and mom throws kid in the car.

    19:58-20:03

And when she drives to the hospital, she ain't stopping for stop signs or stop lights and she's a speeding.

    20:04-20:06

She is breaking the law, why?

    20:06-20:11

Because she loves her kids so much, she will break the law out of love.

    20:11-20:13

And that is what God has done for you.

    20:13-20:15

He has broken his law because he loves you.

    20:17-20:18

    (blows raspberry)

    20:21-20:25

Now again, that's not just the heart strings, but that is completely false.

    20:26-20:30

The glory of the cross is not that God broke his law because he loves you.

    20:30-20:36

The glory of the cross is God fulfilled his law through the death of his son on your behalf.

    20:37-20:38

That's the glory of the cross.

    20:40-20:42

So you wanna learn about Jesus?

    20:43-20:45

    You wanna learn about Jesus?

    20:45-20:46

Well, then you gotta get in the Old Testament.

    20:49-20:51

Because he said, "Oh, I didn't come to throw this away.

    20:51-20:55

"I didn't come, literally, to destroy it." That's what abolish means.

    20:56-21:03

"And I didn't come to abolish this." He said, "I came to carry this out." All right, so why should it matter to me?

    21:04-21:05

'Cause that's where we learn about Jesus.

    21:06-21:10

Number two, why should the Old Testament matter to me?

    21:10-21:11

    Because it's so relevant.

    21:13-21:19

You're like, "Says who?" "Uh, it says Jesus." Look at verse 18.

    21:20-21:36

"For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished." Oh, and by the way, heaven and earth will pass away.

    21:36-21:38

We talked about that last week, didn't we?

    21:39-22:01

21, 2 Peter 3, "Heaven and earth will pass away." But Jesus says, "Until then, not one part of this law "is going to pass until it is all carried out." Every iota, every dot, that's the smallest letter.

    22:02-22:04

That's the smallest stroke on a letter.

    22:04-22:06

What Jesus is saying is this.

    22:06-22:15

Jesus is saying, "Look, until the end of the world, There's not a dot on an I, there's not a cross on a T that is going to be irrelevant.

    22:18-22:30

Jesus is saying every single chapter, every single passage, every single word, every single letter is going to matter until the end of the world.

    22:33-22:37

Now, we looked at what Jesus did so far.

    22:38-22:43

But the Old Testament clearly talks about what He's going to do in the future.

    22:45-22:48

The Old Testament talks about Him coming to destroy His enemies.

    22:50-22:53

The Old Testament tells us about Jesus reigning over all.

    22:54-23:02

The Old Testament tells us about the millennial kingdom, that we learn so little about it in Revelation 20.

    23:03-23:04

Why is there not much content?

    23:04-23:07

Because the Old Testament's full of the content.

    23:07-23:11

That's why you want to know what that kingdom's like, you got to get in your Old Testament.

    23:14-23:17

Jesus here is saying, "Look, God's law is not going away.

    23:18-23:28

God is saying this is how it's going to go down." And here's the thing, that cannot be changed.

    23:29-23:31

Not even just it won't change.

    23:32-23:34

That's true, but it can't change.

    23:36-23:37

    You can't change.

    23:40-23:55

You know, sometimes we, as people, as human beings, sometimes we make rules for things that we have to change, don't we?

    23:59-24:01

Sometimes we make rules and we find out that that rule didn't work.

    24:03-24:06

We didn't anticipate a possible exception to the rule.

    24:06-24:09

    We didn't anticipate a loophole.

    24:09-24:12

And we're constantly changing our rules.

    24:12-24:13

You know what I'm talking about?

    24:15-24:16

Like, let me give you an example.

    24:17-24:22

Years ago, a leading youth group at another church, I invented a game.

    24:22-24:23

    I think I invented it.

    24:25-24:27

But we call it the Ultimate Frisbee Challenge.

    24:28-24:30

And what it is, I see Lyric nodding her head.

    24:30-24:32

You remember the Ultimate Frisbee Challenge?

    24:32-24:33

    Sponsored by Pepsi.

    24:36-24:37

It always had a different sponsor.

    24:38-24:39

Some things are just funny for me.

    24:40-24:45

But it was a combination of like dodgeball and hot potato.

    24:46-24:48

And it was every man for himself.

    24:48-24:50

But we would have 30 second timed rounds.

    24:51-24:54

And the kids would run around the field and have to hit themselves.

    24:54-24:56

We had a little one of them floppy rubber Frisbees.

    24:56-24:58

They'd have to hit somebody with the Frisbee.

    24:58-25:00

And if you get hit with the Frisbee, you were it.

    25:00-25:01

And you would hit somebody else with the Frisbee.

    25:01-25:06

But when the 30 seconds ran out, whoever was in possession of the Frisbee, you're out.

    25:07-25:08

    That's last man standing.

    25:09-25:11

We play that with our youth group here sometimes.

    25:11-25:14

    You should come and play.

    25:15-25:16

    It's a real hoot.

    25:18-25:20

But do you know what I found early on?

    25:21-25:23

I was constantly tweaking the rules.

    25:23-25:23

    You know why?

    25:24-25:25

'Cause I'm like, we have 30 second rounds.

    25:25-25:26

You know what the kids would do?

    25:26-25:27

They'd sit and count it off.

    25:28-25:31

And they would know, Don't be stuck with the frizz.

    25:31-25:33

Okay, we're getting, okay, 25 seconds.

    25:33-25:36

All right, make sure that I'm not in blasting range here, right?

    25:37-25:41

So I'm like, ah, now we get to change how long each of the rounds are.

    25:43-25:44

    So I did that.

    25:45-25:48

I'm like, all right, this is gonna be a 15 second round, and now they're still counting it off.

    25:48-25:49

I'm like, well, that was a dumb rule change.

    25:49-25:50

    Now they can still count.

    25:52-25:58

So I'm like, all right, every round's gonna have a different amount of time, but I'm not telling you how much time.

    25:58-26:04

I'm just gonna call time when the watch or the phone alarm goes off, and whoever has it is done.

    26:06-26:06

    All right?

    26:07-26:12

But then I realized there was another problem we had regarding the rules is we didn't have boundaries.

    26:13-26:18

So I'm like, maybe we shouldn't be running around on the turnpike.

    26:22-26:24

    So, all right, new rule.

    26:26-26:28

You have to stay in this area.

    26:30-26:36

Don't jump in the cattail garden over here where they throw the dead pets, all right?

    26:37-26:39

    There's a story to that.

    26:42-26:43

You're like, what's your point in all this?

    26:44-26:45

    It's a really fun game.

    26:46-26:47

That's all, I just want you to come up.

    26:47-26:48

    No, there's a point.

    26:49-27:01

My point is this, at your workplace, in your church, and sometimes, yes, parents, in your home, Sometimes policies and rules get tweaked and added and subtracted.

    27:04-27:13

What Jesus is saying here is, that's not the case with an omniscient perfect God.

    27:14-27:17

When God laid out his law, do you think God is sitting in heaven?

    27:18-27:23

Like, you know, gosh, I came up with that, but I'm gonna have to change that.

    27:23-27:24

    That's not really fair.

    27:24-27:25

I'm gonna have to change that one.

    27:25-27:27

That one's a little too hard.

    27:27-27:28

I'm gonna have to change that.

    27:28-27:29

    That's not really that clear.

    27:29-27:32

Do you think God is constantly tweaking what he said?

    27:38-27:42

If he does, that's a problem.

    27:44-27:44

    Why?

    27:46-27:51

Because your faith means nothing if your faith is based on something that can change.

    27:54-27:56

    You know what I mean?

    27:56-27:58

It's like today, welcome to harvest today.

    27:59-28:03

Jesus is the fulfillment of God's law and he's coming again to reign.

    28:03-28:05

    Believe in Jesus Christ tomorrow.

    28:07-28:10

Tomorrow, tomorrow you're saved by good works.

    28:10-28:15

So you better get out there and hope that your good outweighs the bad because tomorrow that's the rule.

    28:16-28:17

    Good works is the rule.

    28:17-28:22

And by Friday, God's like, you know what?

    28:22-28:23

    Nevermind.

    28:23-28:30

We're just gonna keep the earth going as it is for all of eternity, and you can all go to hell for your sin.

    28:34-28:38

Do you see the problem if God's constantly changing his rules?

    28:41-28:43

That's exactly what Jesus is saying.

    28:43-28:51

That when God gave his word, when God gave us the law and the prophets, God says, "This is how it is.

    28:51-29:05

"This is how it's going to be, "and nothing is going to change that." The word of God is final and authoritative.

    29:06-29:09

    So, we'll make it easy.

    29:10-29:16

We'll just give a quick test here, according to what Jesus laid out for us here.

    29:19-29:21

Did heaven and earth pass away yet?

    29:23-29:23

    No.

    29:26-29:33

Well then, that means there are still some things written in the Old Testament that need to be accomplished, according to the words of Jesus.

    29:34-29:36

    So, still relevant.

    29:38-29:38

    All right?

    29:39-29:42

So, why should the Old Testament matter to me?

    29:42-29:46

'cause that's where we learn about Jesus, because it's still relevant.

    29:46-29:51

Number three, because you will be evaluated based on what you do with it.

    29:54-29:55

    Look at verse 19.

    29:58-30:01

And every antenna in the room should be up right now.

    30:02-30:03

    Look at this verse.

    30:03-30:24

Jesus says, "Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least, in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Look at the first word there in verse 19.

    30:24-30:31

"Therefore," therefore, Jesus just stressed how important the Old Testament is.

    30:32-30:50

And Jesus is saying, "Look, I said it's important, so it should be important for you too." And I think it's very clear here in this verse, this, this verse 19, this is not a salvation issue here.

    30:52-31:04

This is a reward issue, because very clearly here, Jesus said what you do with God's word, specifically the Old Testament, is tied into your reward.

    31:04-31:05

    Do you see that?

    31:08-31:10

He's not saying not in the kingdom of heaven.

    31:12-31:16

but what you will be called while you're in the kingdom of heaven." You see that?

    31:19-31:21

You know, we talk about God's law.

    31:26-31:30

There are actually three aspects of God's law.

    31:33-32:01

these down. There's judicial, ceremonial, and moral. When you look at God's law in the Old Testament, that's what you find. All of these laws given, it falls into one of those categories. It's judicial, it's ceremonial, or it's moral. Now tune in And here, some light bulbs are gonna go off here in a second.

    32:04-32:05

    It's judicial.

    32:07-32:09

Some of the laws are judicial.

    32:09-32:09

    What's it mean?

    32:10-32:13

It means to govern a specific nation for a specific season.

    32:14-32:15

    Like what nation is that?

    32:15-32:16

    Old Testament Israel.

    32:17-32:23

Some of the laws given in the Old Testament were given for that specific nation for a period of time.

    32:25-32:32

And we aren't bound by those laws any more than you were bound by the national laws of Mexico, okay?

    32:33-32:35

That was for a different nation at a different time.

    32:36-32:37

    That's judicial.

    32:38-32:51

But there's ceremonial laws in the Old Testament that has to do with the temple, the sacrifices, the priests, all of that, the washings, the blood, the altar, all of that, the ceremonial stuff.

    32:51-32:57

All of those are pictures of Jesus that he fulfilled through his death and resurrection.

    32:57-33:03

And you fulfill those things by believing in Jesus.

    33:04-33:05

And I'm gonna get to that more in a second.

    33:05-33:08

So just put that one on the back burner for a minute.

    33:11-33:14

But in the Old Testament, there's a moral aspect of his law.

    33:16-33:17

    That's for everyone.

    33:18-33:29

Those are things like, "You shall love the Lord your God "with your heart soul, mind, and strength." You're like, is that for me as a New Testament Christian?

    33:29-33:29

    Yeah.

    33:30-33:34

"You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Is that for me as a New Testament Christian?

    33:35-33:35

    Yeah.

    33:36-33:39

"Thou shall not steal." Is that for me as a New Testament Christian?

    33:40-33:40

    Yeah.

    33:41-33:44

"Thou shall not covet." Is that for me as a New Testament Christian?

    33:45-33:45

    Yeah.

    33:46-33:48

You're like, I have to obey those things?

    33:50-33:50

    .

    33:50-33:51

    Yeah, you do.

    33:54-33:56

    Listen, listen very closely.

    33:58-34:02

This is a great opportunity to misquote me, so I want you to listen very closely.

    34:03-34:20

Christians live under the new covenant, but meaning we are not under the old covenant law, meaning that our salvation is not based on us keeping the law, all right?

    34:20-34:22

You wanna be crystal clear on that.

    34:22-34:25

Your salvation is not based on keeping the law.

    34:26-34:29

The law was never meant to save anyone.

    34:29-34:32

In fact, the law could not save anyone.

    34:33-34:35

And we covered this a few weeks ago.

    34:37-34:39

    Everyone saved.

    34:40-34:44

Everyone in heaven is there because of Jesus Christ.

    34:44-34:47

That's Old Testament and New Testament and beyond.

    34:47-34:58

Everyone walking around heaven right now Anyone who ever will walk around heaven is going to say, "I'm here because of Jesus Christ." Not by keeping the law.

    34:58-34:59

    Are we clear on that?

    35:01-35:07

The law was to show us Jesus and to show us our need for Jesus.

    35:08-35:09

    We are saved by grace.

    35:10-35:16

Again, we just spent like a whole sermon series talking about this, but I wanna be clear here.

    35:19-35:30

The idea that many Christians have is, okay, I'm not under the law, I'm not saved by the law, so I can do whatever I wanna do.

    35:32-35:33

    That is wrong.

    35:34-35:35

    That is dead wrong.

    35:38-35:43

Under the new covenant, listen, the law wasn't discarded.

    35:47-35:48

It was written on our hearts.

    35:50-35:51

    Do you see the difference?

    35:53-36:12

God didn't say, "Ah, we're done with that." God said, "I'm gonna write this on your very heart." We obey God's commands because we've been born again.

    36:13-36:15

    He lives within us.

    36:16-36:19

We love God and loving God means wanting to obey God.

    36:22-36:25

Listen, we're gonna talk about this over the next few weeks.

    36:29-36:31

    Jesus didn't abolish the law.

    36:33-36:34

    He actually elevated the law.

    36:38-36:44

You know, the law says, "Thou shall not murder," right, sixth commandment.

    36:45-36:47

Did Jesus come along and say, you know what?

    36:48-36:49

    Forget all that.

    36:50-36:52

You want to murder, go ahead.

    36:52-36:53

    You're a child of God.

    36:53-36:54

You're free, you're forgiven, go murder.

    36:55-36:56

    Is that what he said?

    36:58-37:04

No. (laughs) No, of course not.

    37:04-37:04

    What did he say?

    37:05-37:12

He said, you've heard it said don't murder, but I'm telling you, if you have hatred in your heart, you've committed murder in your heart.

    37:14-37:15

    He elevated the law.

    37:16-37:18

He goes, "It's deeper than just what you do.

    37:18-37:22

"It's about who you are." He elevated the law.

    37:23-37:26

You know, the Old Testament says, do not commit adultery, right?

    37:26-37:27

    Seventh Commandment.

    37:28-37:29

Did Jesus say, "Well, you know what?

    37:29-37:30

"Now you're under the new covenant.

    37:31-37:32

    "You're free, you're forgiven.

    37:33-37:41

"So you can just go be with whoever you want, "whenever you want, it doesn't matter because you're free." Of course not.

    37:42-37:43

    That's foolish thinking.

    37:43-37:45

But there are a lot of Christians that believe that.

    37:46-37:48

I can do whatever I want because I'm free.

    37:48-37:49

    Jesus elevated it.

    37:50-37:51

Jesus goes, "No, no, no, no, no.

    37:51-37:53

    "Adultery isn't just an act.

    37:54-37:55

    "Adultery starts here.

    37:55-37:57

    "It's lust in here.

    37:57-38:01

"That is committing adultery." He elevated the law.

    38:03-38:04

    He didn't abolish it.

    38:05-38:11

He said, "It's so much deeper than you think it is." Jesus didn't abolish the law.

    38:12-38:14

He empowers us to keep the law.

    38:16-38:24

And here's one of the most profoundest things you'll ever hear in your life, is that Jesus, you know, he said he came to fulfill the law.

    38:25-38:32

Jesus is still, right now, fulfilling the law through you.

    38:34-38:37

This could be a whole 'nother sermon, but we don't got time for that.

    38:37-38:39

I haven't even gotten to today's sermon yet.

    38:39-38:40

    We're still in the introduction.

    38:41-38:50

But look at what Romans 8, I encourage you to mark this, read this, meditate on this, but look at what this says.

    38:51-38:55

For the law of the spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

    38:56-39:00

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do.

    39:01-39:06

Meaning we couldn't obey the law because we're sinful people in the flesh.

    39:07-39:27

But look at this, by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

    39:29-39:31

    What is that saying?

    39:32-39:39

It's saying when, by the power of the Holy Spirit, You obey God.

    39:40-39:44

Jesus is fulfilling the law through you.

    39:47-39:51

So verse 19, remember verse 19?

    39:53-39:54

It's a warning and an encouragement.

    39:58-39:59

    First of all, the warning.

    40:00-40:19

Jesus said here in verse 19, "If you're a true believer, but you're not really serious about obedience, And you're one of those people that goes around, you believe and you teach, you're free in Christ, it doesn't matter what you do because you're free, you're a child of God, it doesn't matter what you do.

    40:19-40:26

Jesus says, if you're that guy in heaven, you're going to be called the least.

    40:31-40:48

But if you seek to obey God, And you teach others to be obedient to the Word of God in heaven, you're going to be called great.

    40:51-41:05

So listen, if you subscribe to these teachers who say obedience isn't really that important, I'm not judging your salvation, and I'm not judging their salvation either.

    41:07-41:15

But Jesus very clearly right here said, "In glory you will be known as great or least." Which one do you want?

    41:18-41:29

In heaven, for all of eternity, you're going to have a reputation in the eyes of God and in the eyes of everyone there.

    41:31-41:34

And God is evaluating you based on how you handle His Word.

    41:37-41:38

    Pretty sobering, isn't it?

    41:40-41:41

    One more.

    41:43-41:46

Number four, because your salvation depends on it.

    41:47-41:48

Why should the Old Testament matter to me?

    41:49-41:51

Because your salvation depends on it.

    41:52-41:53

    Like, wait, wait, wait, wait.

    41:54-42:01

You're telling me my salvation depends on whether or not I believe the Old Testament is relevant?

    42:01-42:04

    Let's see what Jesus said.

    42:05-42:06

    Look at verse 20.

    42:06-42:17

Jesus, for I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

    42:17-42:21

Oh, you see, this is a salvation issue here.

    42:22-42:29

It wasn't in verse 19, but very quickly, Jesus' teaching turns into a salvation issue in this aspect.

    42:32-42:40

Jesus here very clearly tells us that entering the kingdom requires righteousness.

    42:44-42:49

And he says, "You better be more righteous than the scribes and the Pharisees.

    42:51-42:59

Now I know for us, if you're familiar with the Bible at all you're like scribes and Pharisees, bad guys.

    43:01-43:08

But in Jesus' day, they were looked at as the holy elite.

    43:08-43:10

    Those were the religious people.

    43:11-43:15

It's like the feeling people in our culture would get if you saw some nuns walking down the street.

    43:15-43:18

Wow, those are the holy people.

    43:23-43:26

Listen, your salvation depends on this according to Jesus.

    43:27-43:28

    Here's why.

    43:29-43:34

So much talk through this series and through the Sermon on the Mount on righteousness.

    43:35-43:36

    Righteousness, you're gonna be righteous.

    43:36-43:39

Your righteousness needs to exceed described in the Pharisees.

    43:39-43:44

Righteousness, righteousness, but what is righteousness?

    43:46-43:52

I mean, who determines what's righteousness?

    43:54-43:56

    Who sets that standard?

    43:56-43:57

    Who defines that?

    43:59-44:02

Well, you better get it right because entering the kingdom depends on it.

    44:06-44:07

The scribes, who were the scribes?

    44:07-44:10

They were just, they were students of the law.

    44:10-44:13

Their whole existence was in studying the law of God.

    44:14-44:18

The Pharisees, they were the religious elite of Jesus' day.

    44:18-44:27

They made 600 and some man-made laws that you had to keep in order to keep God's law.

    44:28-44:30

A lot of them circled around the Sabbath.

    44:30-44:31

    They made these rules.

    44:31-44:37

You have to do these things because if you don't, then you have broken the Sabbath and that's breaking God's law.

    44:38-44:41

So they piled on hundreds and hundreds of laws.

    44:43-44:52

And you see the scribes and the Pharisees, they seemed so holy, but they weren't.

    44:54-44:58

All of their righteousness was external.

    45:01-45:02

    Their teaching was hollow.

    45:05-45:09

And you read your gospels, you see Jesus was constantly calling out their hypocrisy.

    45:09-45:11

    Read Matthew 23 sometime.

    45:14-45:21

See the problem with the scribes and the Pharisees, their righteous rules, it was about ceremony, not about the hearts.

    45:22-45:23

It was about putting on a show.

    45:24-45:25

    It wasn't about the heart.

    45:26-45:30

It was all about them, and it wasn't really about God at all.

    45:33-45:37

Their laws and their rules and their religion didn't have any love for others at all.

    45:40-45:44

They were mainly concerned with actions, not motives.

    45:48-45:53

See, their disposition was, "Look at all the stuff that I do.

    45:53-45:55

Look at what a good person I am.

    45:55-46:02

Look at how righteous I am because I keep all the rules." And Jesus here is saying righteousness doesn't work that way.

    46:08-46:14

And like the scribes and the Pharisees, we can fool ourselves into thinking that we're righteous.

    46:18-46:29

I have to ask you, do you do what you do to look good to others, or because you love God and you want to honor and obey Him?

    46:30-46:31

    Which is it?

    46:35-46:39

If it's the former, according to Jesus, you're not in the kingdom.

    46:43-46:46

You're like, all right, then what determines righteousness?

    46:50-46:52

What has Jesus been talking about this whole time?

    46:54-47:00

What determines righteousness is found in the word of God.

    47:02-47:04

That is where we get our definition.

    47:07-47:12

Righteousness comes from a faith that is defined in the word of God.

    47:13-47:15

    I believe in Jesus.

    47:16-47:18

I believe he is the Messiah.

    47:18-47:20

    I have received him.

    47:20-47:23

He has changed me from the inside out.

    47:23-47:27

God wants my heart and he has it.

    47:30-47:37

and righteousness results in a lifestyle of obedience to God's Word.

    47:39-47:40

All right, that was the introduction.

    47:43-47:43

    Here's the sermon.

    47:47-47:48

You did not have to groan.

    47:52-47:55

So, how should I view the Old Testament?

    47:57-48:02

I would strongly suggest that you view it the way Jesus did.

    48:04-48:05

    All right, let's pray.

    48:07-48:18

Our Father in heaven, again, we ask that your word changes us, changes our minds, and when our minds change, our conduct changes.

    48:20-48:35

But Father, I pray that even as born-again believers under the new covenant, we would grow in our understanding of the purpose of the law and the prophets.

    48:36-48:42

Father, we live in a day where so many churches and so many pastors and preachers want to just completely throw it out.

    48:44-48:49

And we turn to your word and we see Jesus Christ with a much different attitude.

    48:50-49:05

So Father, I pray that for this church, and I pray for those that watch this and listen to this and download these messages, I pray, Father, that we would take the attitude towards the Old Testament that Jesus had.

    49:09-49:10

    You've called us to righteousness.

    49:14-49:22

us pursue righteousness as it is according to your Word. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Glorification: The Hope is Real

Introduction:

John 19:28-30 - After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Revelation 16:17 - The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, “It is done!”

After this, "Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said to fulfill the scripture, 'I thirst.' A jar full of sour wine stood there.

    00:17-00:22

So they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.

    00:22-00:34

When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, 'It is finished.' And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

    00:36-00:46

Over this past month, we've been examining God's word to see that the Son of God came to finish some things.

    00:47-00:50

And we've been trying to just answer one question.

    00:52-00:53

    What is finished?

    00:54-00:57

Jesus made the declaration, it is finished.

    00:57-01:05

So what is, well, I guess to put it all in one word, salvation?

    01:08-01:16

The way of salvation, it's done, the work is done, and we've been spending time looking at different facets of salvation.

    01:18-01:21

First we saw justification, the guilt is gone.

    01:21-01:25

You realize Jesus has taken your sin away.

    01:27-01:31

There are no grounds for punishment when you're in Christ.

    01:32-01:33

    The guilt is gone.

    01:33-01:34

    He's made you righteous.

    01:36-01:40

And then we saw reconciliation, the relationship is restored.

    01:42-01:43

By nature, you are not God's friend.

    01:44-01:47

The Bible says by nature, we are enemies of God.

    01:47-01:51

Jesus Christ came to restore the relationship with God.

    01:53-01:55

Pastor Taylor, a couple of days ago, talked about redemption.

    01:57-01:58

    The price was paid.

    01:58-02:01

There was a literal price that was paid.

    02:02-02:09

You see, you have sinned against God, and it wasn't as if God was like, oh, that's okay, don't worry about it, I'm just gonna forget about it.

    02:09-02:09

    No, no, no.

    02:10-02:13

As Pastor Taylor pointed out, you owe God an infinite debt.

    02:16-02:19

And God paid that himself through the death of his son.

    02:21-02:24

    It is finished.

    02:27-02:33

You know, you think of those words on the cross, it is finished.

    02:33-02:44

You know, that's not the only time that Jesus declares that something is finished.

    02:46-02:48

    It's only the first time.

    02:50-03:00

Do you know the next time Jesus says it is finished is when God pours out judgment?

    03:02-03:06

Revelation 16, 17, it's the last bold judgment.

    03:06-03:12

The book of Revelation talks about there's seal trumpets and trumpet judgments and bold judgments.

    03:12-03:15

The last judgment of God is poured out.

    03:16-03:17

    Look at this.

    03:18-03:28

Revelation 16, 17, the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air and a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne saying, it is done.

    03:32-03:34

That's the next time Jesus says it is finished.

    03:36-03:39

Today I wanna talk about the last time he says it.

    03:40-03:49

You know the last time Jesus declares Something is finished as after He creates a new heaven and a new earth.

    03:52-03:55

Revelation chapter 21, I want you to turn there.

    03:59-04:00

    Revelation chapter 21.

    04:06-04:10

Revelation chapter 21, look at verses five and six.

    04:10-04:17

It says, "And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new.

    04:18-04:40

"Also," he said, "Write this down, "for these words are trustworthy and true." And he said to me, "It is done." Like, wait, wait, what is he talking about here?

    04:42-04:48

What is finished, the promise of glorification?

    04:50-04:54

That is, the hope is real.

    04:56-04:58

    The hope is real.

    05:00-05:01

We're gonna talk about hope today.

    05:03-05:10

Because when we talk about hope, We use it in a different way than the Bible uses the word hope, right?

    05:10-05:15

When we say hope, what we mean is wish, right?

    05:15-05:16

    You know what I mean?

    05:16-05:19

Like we say, I hope it doesn't rain today.

    05:19-05:20

    What are we saying?

    05:21-05:22

I wish that it doesn't rain.

    05:22-05:26

Or we say like, I hope that the pirates win today.

    05:28-05:28

    What are we saying?

    05:29-05:32

We're saying that our theology allows for miracles.

    05:35-05:38

But you see, that's not how the Bible uses the word hope.

    05:40-05:46

Biblically, church, listen, hope is the confident anticipation of receiving Jesus' promises.

    05:47-05:51

Biblically, hope, it's in the bag, it's happening.

    05:52-05:55

I'm just waiting for it to take place, but it's gonna happen.

    05:56-05:58

I'm not wondering if it's gonna happen.

    05:58-06:03

I can't wait, I know it's going to, and I'm just waiting for that to happen.

    06:03-06:04

    That's biblical hope.

    06:05-06:10

That's the receipt that we hold onto that says it's coming.

    06:10-06:15

I know that it's coming, and I can't wait for that day.

    06:15-06:17

    That is biblical hope.

    06:19-06:21

See, that's what we're here to celebrate today.

    06:24-06:26

Actually, every Sunday, we celebrate this.

    06:26-06:35

And actually, for the Christian, You celebrate this every day of your life, that Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

    06:37-06:40

We've been spending so much time talking about the fact that he died for our sins.

    06:40-06:46

Yes, that's true, but three days later, he rose from the dead to give us the promise of eternal life.

    06:47-06:49

And the Bible says that he went back to heaven.

    06:49-06:50

And you're like, well, what's he doing now?

    06:50-06:52

Do you know what Jesus is doing right now?

    06:53-06:54

Like right now, do you know what he's doing?

    06:55-06:58

He told us in John chapter 14 what he would be doing.

    06:59-07:12

He says, "I go to prepare a place for you." Right now, Jesus Christ is building a place for his people in heaven.

    07:14-07:18

We're gonna talk about heaven today, the place of our hope.

    07:20-07:22

Do you know what heaven's like?

    07:27-07:36

Sadly, there's so much confusion about heaven because people embrace ideas about heaven that just aren't in the Bible.

    07:37-07:45

I think for a lot of people, their ideas of heaven come more from a Bugs Bunny cartoon than from what God actually said.

    07:47-07:53

There's just so much nonsense about the people believe about heaven that's just not true biblically.

    07:53-07:55

You know what number one is, by the way?

    07:55-08:07

The most nonsensical, wrong, false thing that people believe about heaven that's just absolutely not true is that good people go to heaven.

    08:08-08:10

You have to be a good person to go to heaven.

    08:10-08:15

That's just bombarded onto us from society.

    08:15-08:20

Good people go to heaven, good people get, well, that's not true.

    08:20-08:24

If that was true, heaven would be empty.

    08:26-08:29

We're going to talk more about that in a bit.

    08:31-08:33

But no, you do not get to heaven by being a good person.

    08:35-08:41

But you know, even Christians, honestly, even Christians are clueless about heaven.

    08:43-09:03

Just grab your Christian, your average churchgoer, and say, "Well, what's heaven like?" you're gonna get answers like, "Um, well, I thinkin' Grandma's there." They're like, "Well, what do you do in heaven?" "Well, I guess you, um, I guess you play a harp, right?

    09:04-09:12

"And then you sit on clouds." And, um, yeah, that's all I got.

    09:14-09:21

Like, well, maybe, um, maybe you've been getting your theology about heaven from Bugs Bunny from a far side cartoon.

    09:24-09:32

But I think many Christians aren't really excited about heaven because they don't know what the Bible actually says about it.

    09:34-09:37

We had a funeral last week for the oldest member of our church.

    09:37-09:38

He was two weeks shy of 99.

    09:39-09:40

And she's having a good day.

    09:41-09:45

What a great celebration of her life and a celebration of the fulfillment of her faith.

    09:47-10:00

But I think a lot of people, even that we're sitting in that funeral, might not have been excited because they don't really know what she's experiencing in heaven, what is coming in the future in heaven.

    10:04-10:05

We need to educate ourselves, church.

    10:07-10:08

I mean, think about it this way.

    10:09-10:11

Imagine if I booked you a three-month vacation.

    10:14-10:14

    Imagine that.

    10:14-10:15

If I booked you, I'm like, you know what?

    10:15-10:16

    You've been working hard.

    10:16-10:16

    You know what?

    10:18-10:19

I'm gonna get you the plane tickets.

    10:20-10:27

You know, you just bring your wife, jump at the airport and get on the plane, three month vacation on me.

    10:30-10:31

Would you wanna know where you're going?

    10:34-10:35

Would you wanna know what you'd be doing?

    10:36-10:39

What if you said, "Oh, thanks Pastor Jeff, that was really nice of you.

    10:40-10:40

    Where am I going?

    10:40-10:52

What am I doing?" What if I said, "Don't worry about it, you'll like it." No, I want to know where I'm going to be spending three months of my life.

    10:52-10:54

And I'm like, oh, it'll be nice.

    10:56-10:58

What am I gonna be doing there?

    10:58-10:59

    Fun stuff.

    11:01-11:05

Wouldn't you want more information of where you're going to be spending three months of your life?

    11:05-11:10

    Okay, reminder, heaven is eternal.

    11:12-11:18

Wouldn't you like to know what it's going to be like for eternity?

    11:20-11:25

If you do, you're in the right place this morning because that is exactly what we're gonna be seeing from God's word.

    11:26-11:27

So on your outline, take some notes.

    11:29-11:30

    The hope is real.

    11:31-11:32

    The hope is real.

    11:33-11:34

    The truth about heaven.

    11:36-11:38

    The truth about heaven.

    11:40-11:43

Number one, write this down, everything is new.

    11:44-11:45

    Everything is new.

    11:49-11:51

Verses one and two in Revelation 21.

    11:51-11:58

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away and the sea was no more.

    11:59-12:09

And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

    12:11-12:11

    Stop there.

    12:12-12:13

New heaven and new earth, why?

    12:13-12:14

Why do we need a new heaven and new earth?

    12:15-12:34

Well, because this is talking about what's happening future, and at this point, the heaven and earth now, the one that you're like sitting on right now, will be vaporized by God's glory, according to 2 Peter chapter three, according to Revelation 20 11.

    12:36-12:38

He talks about this new Jerusalem.

    12:40-12:41

    Like, what is New Jerusalem?

    12:42-12:46

What's the capital city of the new heaven and the new earth?

    12:46-12:54

And John describes it as coming down from heaven onto this new earth.

    12:56-12:58

    It's a fascinating study.

    12:58-13:00

You can really dig into it on your own.

    13:02-13:07

Just to give you a little overview, verses 15 and 17 give us the dimensions.

    13:07-13:09

And by the way, these are literal measurements.

    13:09-13:10

    The Bible's clear about that.

    13:11-13:16

But New Jerusalem is a massive city and it's shaped like a cube.

    13:17-13:22

And each wall is 1,380 miles long.

    13:25-13:29

And each wall is 216 feet thick.

    13:29-13:31

You're like, can you give me a frame of reference?

    13:31-13:32

    Yeah, absolutely, I can.

    13:34-13:40

If you were to take this New Jerusalem and put it on our current earth, just drop it onto North America.

    13:42-13:51

If you were to drop it onto North America, it would go from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, the Gulf of America.

    13:52-13:56

It would go from the Atlantic Ocean.

    13:57-13:59

I'm still trying to adjust to that, I'm sorry.

    14:00-14:04

It would go from the Atlantic Ocean to Colorado.

    14:06-14:09

That is the size of New Jerusalem.

    14:10-14:12

You're like, why do I need to know this?

    14:12-14:20

Look, that is the place that Jesus is preparing for you right now.

    14:23-14:34

And this passage describes the final and eternal heaven, and over and over he uses the greatest word possible that he could use to describe.

    14:35-14:39

anything, and it's the word new.

    14:42-14:43

    New, look at verse five.

    14:43-14:45

This is the best verse in the Bible.

    14:46-14:50

And I know somebody would say, well, actually, Pastor Jeff, it's all God's word.

    14:50-14:51

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know.

    14:52-14:53

But this is the best verse in the Bible.

    14:56-15:06

It says, "And he who was seated on the throne "said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'" No.

    15:09-15:12

Look, that is... that is awesome!

    15:15-15:21

And we can relate to that, can't we? Because there's nothing like getting new stuff, right?

    15:23-15:24

    Don't we love new things?

    15:25-15:26

    New shoes.

    15:28-15:29

    A new car.

    15:30-15:31

    New jeans.

    15:33-15:34

    A new phone.

    15:35-15:42

I'm pleased to announce that Pastor Taylor finally upgraded from his iPhone 8.

    15:45-15:54

Yeah, a little bonus celebration today. But wasn't it so exciting getting that new phone, Pastor Taylor?

    16:05-16:08

You know what, I thought it was bad until Jay Nower showed me.

    16:08-16:09

He has, what do you have, an SE?

    16:17-16:18

Yeah, take good care of that, Jay.

    16:18-16:19

We're gonna put that in a museum.

    16:20-16:21

    (laughing)

    16:23-16:27

So, we love getting new stuff, right?

    16:27-16:28

    Getting a new computer.

    16:29-16:31

Men, get that new fishing rod.

    16:31-16:32

    Ladies, get the new purse.

    16:34-16:36

    How about a new puppy?

    16:37-16:38

    Oh, that's the best.

    16:40-16:44

But there's nothing like getting new stuff.

    16:45-16:51

And you know, the Bible says in heaven, Everything is always new.

    16:54-16:55

So a little tip for you.

    16:55-16:59

If you're in Christ, and if you are, you will end up in heaven.

    16:59-17:18

I just want to encourage you, if you're trying to make friends, to not walk up to somebody in heaven and say, "Hey, what's new?" Because they're going to say, "You are, amigo." Because I don't know if you got the memo, but everything here is new.

    17:19-17:26

I have people say to me sometimes, like, "Heavenstone's kind of boring." Like, what are you talking about?

    17:27-17:29

    That is a clueless statement.

    17:30-17:30

    Boring.

    17:32-17:36

Everything is always going to be new.

    17:40-17:46

And if that's not a beautiful enough description with that little word, He gives us a word picture that really drives it home.

    17:47-18:00

He says, "It's prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." Like Jesus, what kind of care and attention are you putting into creating this new heaven and earth?

    18:01-18:02

    This new Jerusalem?

    18:04-18:09

What kind of meticulous care is going into preparing this new city?

    18:10-18:16

The Bible says it's like a bride preparing herself for her husband.

    18:18-18:21

That's a word picture that really impacts me.

    18:22-18:24

Because look, I've been to a lot of weddings.

    18:25-18:26

    It's part of my job.

    18:26-18:27

I've been to a lot of weddings.

    18:28-18:33

And you know something that I've never, ever, ever seen at a wedding is this.

    18:33-18:39

Like, it's wedding day, and I come to the front of the chapel or the woods or the barn or wherever we're having it.

    18:42-18:45

Oh, they have them everywhere now, but I'm up there with the guys, right?

    18:46-18:50

And here comes the bridesmaids and they take their place.

    18:50-18:52

    Oh, it's the big moment.

    18:54-18:55

    The music shifts, right?

    18:56-18:57

    And you know what's next.

    18:58-18:59

    Here comes the bride, right?

    19:00-19:01

You know what I've never seen?

    19:02-19:16

So the doors fling open and there's the bride in a college hoodie, wearing sweatpants and Crocs.

    19:19-19:21

Crocs will not be in heaven, by the way.

    19:22-19:32

Well, the Bible doesn't say, I'm just thinking it's a safe assumption, but I've never seen her where she's got a near terminal case of bedhead.

    19:36-19:39

    I've never seen that, ever.

    19:40-19:41

Do you know what I have seen though?

    19:43-19:44

    Every time.

    19:46-19:48

    A breathtakingly beautiful bride.

    19:51-19:52

How did she get that way?

    19:54-19:55

    She prepared.

    19:56-20:12

Do you know how much time and effort and energy and money and detail, and it goes in, She puts everything into making herself as beautiful and perfect as she can for her husband.

    20:16-20:25

And that is the kind of attention and care that Jesus is putting into preparing this place for his people.

    20:26-20:27

    Wrap your brain around that.

    20:29-20:35

But the Bible says in heaven, Everything is new.

    20:38-20:40

Oh, it gets even better than that.

    20:42-20:45

Because number two, write this down, every day is in God's presence.

    20:46-20:49

Everything is new and every day is in God's presence.

    20:49-20:50

    Look at verse three.

    20:51-21:02

Verse three, he says, "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

    21:02-21:03

    "He will dwell with them.

    21:04-21:14

and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God." Every day is in God's presence.

    21:18-21:24

Don't you wish that you lived at the time that Jesus lived?

    21:25-21:46

Wouldn't it have just been absolutely amazing to watch Jesus, like to sit down with Him, to hear Him teach, to watch Him heal, to watch Him feed the thousands with the little kids' lunch?

    21:47-21:55

Wouldn't that have just been awesome to personally be in the presence of Jesus Christ?

    21:59-22:02

Well, I got good news for you.

    22:03-22:08

In heaven, you're gonna get that like every single day.

    22:10-22:13

Because according to verse three, we're always in God's presence.

    22:15-22:27

See, that's good news, my friends, because I think if we're honest, sometimes God seems distant right now.

    22:27-22:29

    I mean, he's not, right?

    22:30-22:31

    He's not distant.

    22:33-22:37

But can we just be honest in church for a second and say sometimes it feels like he is?

    22:41-22:42

You know, we go through trials.

    22:44-23:00

or hurting, maybe you've been betrayed, disappointed, you're just worn out, and you're like, God, where are you?

    23:01-23:06

Seems like I need you the most right now, you seem absent, where are you?

    23:09-23:14

Well, never again will God seem distant.

    23:17-23:20

The Bible says he is going to tabernacle with his people.

    23:20-23:31

He is going to pitch a tent in unprecedented perfect fellowship in the midst of his people.

    23:32-23:37

Every day of heaven is being in the presence of God.

    23:37-23:38

    (sniffling)

    23:40-23:41

    It's the truth about heaven.

    23:42-23:43

    Everything's new.

    23:44-23:45

Every day is in God's presence.

    23:45-23:47

And number three, everything that hurts is gone.

    23:49-23:50

    (sniffling)

    23:52-23:53

    Everything that hurts is gone.

    23:53-23:54

    Look at verse four.

    23:56-24:00

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more.

    24:00-24:07

Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.

    24:07-24:12

No crying, no mourning, no crying and no pain.

    24:13-24:14

Do you know what that means?

    24:17-24:23

That means no, a lot of other things.

    24:24-24:26

    That means no depression.

    24:28-24:29

    That means no cancer.

    24:31-24:33

    That means no diabetes.

    24:36-24:37

    That means no organ failure.

    24:39-24:40

    That means no autism.

    24:42-24:44

    That means no wheelchairs.

    24:46-24:49

That means no mental health problems.

    24:52-24:54

    That means no dentist appointments.

    24:58-25:01

I see somebody rejoicing in the back greatly over that.

    25:02-25:07

But I can tell you in the first service, there was like a group of dentists sitting, right about where the Zenko's are right now.

    25:08-25:11

And I told him, like, look, we're gonna be out of a job in heaven.

    25:12-25:16

Nobody's gonna need to hear about Jesus from me, nobody's gonna need their teeth fixed by them.

    25:17-25:21

So, you know, there's no more tears.

    25:22-25:24

There's no more death, there's no more goodbyes.

    25:26-25:29

Every bit of pain and heartache and discouragement.

    25:32-25:32

    Never again.

    25:34-25:34

    Never.

    25:36-25:37

    Everything that hurts is gone.

    25:40-25:57

People ask, "Well, you know, will I remember "the failures of my life on earth?" Because I would think if I could remember my failures of my life on earth, that boy, there'd be some tears over that in heaven.

    25:58-26:00

Will I remember the failures of this life?

    26:01-26:02

    I don't know.

    26:03-26:11

But I do know this for a fact, that if you do remember the failures of this life, it's not gonna bother you.

    26:13-26:15

Because there's no more mourning or pain.

    26:18-26:18

    Sure about that.

    26:20-26:22

And you could get to this point, you're like, really?

    26:23-26:24

    Now hang on a second.

    26:26-26:29

This sounds just a little too fantastic.

    26:31-26:31

    Really?

    26:32-26:33

Well, look at verse five again.

    26:35-27:01

And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also, he said, "Write this down, "for these words are trustworthy and true." Oh, everything is made new, everything stays new, and you're like, "Adam, is that really true?" Jesus says here, write this down.

    27:02-27:05

You write this down, you take this to the bank.

    27:06-27:08

You build your life on this, man.

    27:08-27:11

    This is trustworthy and true.

    27:14-27:16

    Listen, this isn't fantasy stuff.

    27:17-27:23

This isn't like fairy tale stuff that we say to placate children when grandma passes away.

    27:28-27:31

Jesus says this is real, this is trustworthy and true.

    27:34-27:38

Every hurt is forever behind you.

    27:39-27:41

    Everything that hurts is gone.

    27:41-27:45

Number four, it gets even better.

    27:46-27:48

I know you don't think it can, but check this out.

    27:48-27:50

    Number four, everything is yours.

    27:52-27:53

    Everything is yours.

    27:56-27:56

    Look at verse six.

    27:57-27:59

And he said to me, "It is done.

    28:01-28:06

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, "the beginning and the end.

    28:06-28:16

"To the thirsty I will give "from the spring of the water of life without payments." Who are the thirsty?

    28:18-28:19

    Who are the thirsty?

    28:21-28:22

    I hope you are.

    28:23-28:28

Thirsty refers to people who realize their spiritual need and genuinely thirst for God.

    28:30-28:38

Heaven is for people who know they need Jesus Christ and they receive Jesus Christ and they love Jesus Christ.

    28:38-28:39

That's what he's talking about here.

    28:41-28:45

You see, water, biblically, is a symbol of fulfillment.

    28:46-28:48

    It's a symbol of satisfaction.

    28:48-28:50

I was thirsty and in need.

    28:51-28:54

Now, from the living water, I have been satisfied.

    28:55-28:57

    That's what water's talking about.

    28:57-28:58

That's what the Bible's talking about.

    28:59-29:00

Excuse me when it talks about water.

    29:02-29:03

    Satisfaction.

    29:05-29:06

    It's great news.

    29:08-29:12

That means heaven's not going to be lacking anything that would add to your satisfaction.

    29:12-29:13

    You know that?

    29:14-29:18

That means you're not gonna be walking around heaven and say, you know what?

    29:19-29:20

    This place is pretty good.

    29:20-30:18

But I have a few ideas that would make it a little better. You're going to be absolutely, totally, perfectly satisfied in heaven. And this, this is your heritage. Look at verse 7. He says, "The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God, and he will be my son." We talked about this with justification, that we don't live in fear of God as judge, if you're in Christ, that You're not afraid of God as judge.

    30:19-30:22

You live in the freedom of God as father.

    30:25-30:26

That he adopted us as his children.

    30:31-30:35

But being a child has implications for the future.

    30:39-30:40

    Like, what do you mean?

    30:40-30:45

What I mean is, if you're a child of God, you receive an inheritance.

    30:47-30:49

Like look at Romans chapter eight here.

    30:53-30:59

Romans eight says, "The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

    30:59-31:14

And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

    31:15-31:25

You see, Paul wrote this to the Romans, and Roman adoption was very interesting.

    31:25-31:27

I was reading about it this past week.

    31:28-31:40

Do you know, in Roman culture, adopted children actually received greater honor than naturally born children in the home.

    31:43-31:50

Like if a couple has natural children, it's like, well, you just came into the world the regular way.

    31:52-32:00

But if you adopted someone, it was, ah, you though on the other hand, you were chosen to be a part of this family.

    32:01-32:16

But there's something else interesting about Roman children, including the adopted children, by the way, that they all received an equal share of the inheritance.

    32:20-32:23

You're like, good for the Romans.

    32:24-32:26

What does that have to do with me?

    32:27-32:29

Here's what this has to do with you.

    32:30-32:30

    Look at this.

    32:31-32:36

We are fellow heirs with Christ.

    32:38-32:39

    You know what that means?

    32:43-32:45

I can tell some of you are very excited about that.

    32:45-32:46

So we're gonna walk through this together.

    32:47-32:49

You are fellow heirs with Christ.

    32:49-32:50

    You know what that means?

    32:51-32:58

That means you will receive the same inheritance that Jesus receives.

    33:02-33:05

    So, what does Jesus own?

    33:07-33:07

    Everything.

    33:10-33:12

So what do you stand to inherit?

    33:14-33:15

    Everything.

    33:17-33:18

    Everything.

    33:19-33:20

    Wait, wait, wait.

    33:20-33:22

Hang on a second there, Pastor Jeff.

    33:23-33:26

You was talking about the new heavens earlier.

    33:28-33:31

Do you mean I'm gonna inherit the new heavens?

    33:34-33:34

    Everything.

    33:37-33:39

And if you're like, oh, well, he's creating the new earth.

    33:39-33:42

Do you mean I'm gonna inherit that new earth too?

    33:42-33:43

    That's gonna belong to me?

    33:48-33:48

    Everything.

    33:50-33:59

And you're like, well, that giant city that you was talking about, Am I gonna inherit that too?

    33:59-34:00

Is that gonna belong to me?

    34:00-34:04

And I'm like, look, I'll do respect.

    34:04-34:06

What part of everything do you not understand?

    34:08-34:10

    Everything will belong to you.

    34:14-34:16

But do you know the greatest thing that you're going to inherit?

    34:18-34:19

    Is God himself.

    34:20-34:21

Do you see that in verse seven?

    34:23-34:36

He says, "I will be his God." Oh no, let's not gloss over that because that's like the Levites in the Old Testament.

    34:37-34:52

Remember, Israel was told, you know, that they were gonna receive an inheritance in the promised land, but you go to like Deuteronomy 18-2, the Levites did not get an inheritance like the other tribes of Israel.

    34:52-34:57

They were told that God is their inheritance.

    35:03-35:07

And if you get God, you get everything.

    35:09-35:19

If you're a fellow heir with Christ, that means someday everything is yours.

    35:22-35:25

And finally, number five, truth about heaven.

    35:25-35:26

    Everything's new.

    35:27-35:28

    Every day's in God's presence.

    35:28-35:32

Everything that hurts is gone and everything is yours.

    35:33-35:35

But we do have to say this because it's in the text.

    35:37-35:38

    Everyone is not going.

    35:44-36:08

Now look, you know, it'd be real easy to come into Easter service and we're all wearing our spiffy clothes and the music is fantastic, and it would be so easy to get caught up in this passage and get excited about a heaven that some of you aren't going to see.

    36:10-36:11

    Look at verse eight.

    36:13-36:39

John says, "But as for the cowardly, "The faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, "the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, "their portion will be in the lake "that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death." See this list?

    36:40-36:43

These are people that love their sin more than they love Jesus.

    36:47-36:49

But I gotta ask you, are you on that list?

    36:54-36:57

Is there anything here that characterizes you?

    36:59-37:04

Understanding that murderer means hateful and sexually immoral means lustful.

    37:07-37:07

    You there?

    37:09-37:15

You know the one that always sticks out to me in this list is the first one, cowardly.

    37:19-37:20

    What does that mean?

    37:20-37:31

It's not saying being afraid of stuff is a sin, like in the sense of I'm afraid to go camping because I'm afraid of bears and snakes.

    37:32-37:34

And that's not what that's talking about at all.

    37:36-37:42

It's talking about being afraid to follow Jesus Christ because there is a cost.

    37:42-37:43

And what will my friends think?

    37:43-37:44

And what am I going to have to give up?

    37:45-37:57

and refusal to follow Christ, God says, "You're a coward." You mean he bought your way to heaven with the blood of his son?

    37:59-38:10

And you're too afraid to receive him because of what your goofy friends might think, because of what sinful thing you might have to give up.

    38:11-38:11

    You're a coward.

    38:13-38:14

    And that's not my opinion.

    38:14-38:15

    That's God's opinion.

    38:15-38:16

Well, I guess it is mine if it's God's.

    38:18-38:19

    But he said it.

    38:22-38:24

You think following Christ is easy?

    38:24-38:26

You think it's easy to trust God?

    38:30-38:32

Do you think it's easy to say no to sin?

    38:34-38:41

Do you think it's easy to say yes to serving Christ when it's inconvenient or difficult or harder than we thought it was gonna be?

    38:44-38:46

    This ain't for cowards, okay?

    38:48-38:54

All of the items on this list characterize people who have never repented.

    38:54-38:56

    They've never received Christ.

    38:56-38:57

    And these are just evidences.

    38:58-39:00

He's saying that this is what they lived like.

    39:01-39:21

And I have to ask you, if you took an honest inward look at yourself, would you say that my life is generally characterized by a love for Jesus Christ, Or would you say, my life is generally characterized by a love of my sin, myself, my way.

    39:21-39:23

Which one is it for you?

    39:28-39:38

Because if it's the latter, then none of these promises about heaven, none of this hope is for you.

    39:42-39:49

I can have the worship team join us back up on the platform here.

    39:54-39:56

    It is finished.

    40:00-40:03

    It is finished.

    40:07-40:12

Someday, you're gonna hear Jesus say those words again.

    40:16-40:23

For some of you, you're going to be horrified to hear Him say it when He brings judgment.

    40:26-40:34

And for some of you, you will rejoice when you hear Him say it, because He's giving you everything.

    40:36-40:38

    The hope of heaven.

    40:40-40:41

    It is finished.

    40:42-40:49

Today, today, we hear those words from the cross.

    40:51-40:55

So if you have received Jesus Christ, your sin has been taken away.

    40:55-41:01

If you have received Jesus Christ, he rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    41:02-41:11

And if you have received Jesus Christ, you do not need to wait for heaven to rejoice in Him.

    41:12-41:17

So let's stand and let's celebrate Him for who He is and all that He's done.

    41:17-41:21

Let's rejoice in the victory of Jesus Christ.
