Open up your Bibles to the book of Psalms.

    00:02-00:04

We're going to study Psalm 96 today.

    00:06-00:30

And while you're turning there, I want to tell you a story about a guy whose nickname was "The Great Blasphemer." Back in 1736, this kid named John Newton, he decided he was going to get a job for a shipping company, this sea merchant guy hired him.

    00:32-00:36

So he worked on this shipping dock and shipping stuff.

    00:36-00:38

He was out on the seas.

    00:38-00:43

And he was not a very responsible young man.

    00:44-00:50

He took six or seven sea journeys and he got fired because of his lack of restraint.

    00:51-00:56

His boss told him that he had unsettled behavior and impatient of restraint.

    00:57-01:01

This is a pattern that would persist in this young boy's life for a long time.

    01:03-01:04

    He joined the Royal Navy.

    01:05-01:11

This was in, he was an English sailor, so this was around London, Liverpool, where he worked.

    01:11-01:16

And he joined the Royal Navy and the pattern continued.

    01:17-01:22

He got discharged from the Navy and because of rebellion, he deserted.

    01:23-01:24

He ended up working on a slave ship.

    01:25-01:27

    Again, the pattern continued.

    01:27-01:33

He was arrogant, insubordinate, and recklessly immoral.

    01:34-01:38

He said in his journals later, "I sinned with a high hand.

    01:38-01:51

I made it my study to tempt and seduce others." In 1747, at the lowest point of his life, he was in rags, had no money, he was hungry, and he worked on these slave ships.

    01:54-02:04

He was reading a book, a Christian book, and this storm came upon the ship, battered the ship severely, and he thought he was going to die.

    02:05-02:10

And so at that point, he gave his life to Jesus Christ.

    02:10-02:11

    He got saved.

    02:13-02:21

Later on in his life, he became a minister and had a Thursday night Bible study.

    02:22-02:32

Maybe it was like a small group type thing It was a Thursday night thing, and he would write songs for this Bible study for them to sing.

    02:32-02:38

And one of those songs is one of the most beloved hymns that we sing now, Amazing Grace.

    02:39-02:40

You guys know that song, right?

    02:41-02:44

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.

    02:45-02:47

I once was lost, but now am found.

    02:47-02:49

Was blind, but now I see.

    02:50-02:52

Some people might look at that and say, "A wretch?

    02:53-02:55

    That's kind of hyperbole.

    02:56-02:57

    Isn't that kind of extreme?

    02:57-03:00

You know, a wretch is kind of like a despicable person.

    03:02-03:14

Why do we have to be so harsh on the guy?" Well, John Newton knew what kind of a guy he was, and he knew what Jesus Christ had saved him from.

    03:15-03:18

So he was able to write those words and mean it from his heart.

    03:19-03:23

Songs like that come from somebody's experience.

    03:24-03:37

A lot of times, and you can talk to music people, Darren or Matt or guys that are into music, a lot of times the songs that are written come from their experience, what's happened in their lives.

    03:38-03:43

And the same is true with David in this psalm, Psalm 96.

    03:44-03:49

Something happened here make him write this song.

    03:49-03:57

I don't know if he was, you know, was he sitting around in a, you know, under a tree and watching the sheep and he decides, he's, hey, I got a good song I wanna write.

    03:58-03:59

And then he starts scribbling it down.

    03:59-04:06

That might've happened, but in this song, this Psalm, something happened that made him write this.

    04:07-04:08

And so we're gonna look at that today.

    04:09-04:14

Before we get into the Psalm itself, I'd like to read the Psalm actually in its entirety.

    04:14-04:25

And then for us to really get what's happening here, I think we got to backtrack in history a little bit and see what was happening to make David write this psalm.

    04:27-04:29

Sing to the Lord a new song, he says.

    04:29-04:31

Sing to the Lord, all the earth.

    04:32-04:33

Sing to the Lord, bless his name.

    04:34-04:37

Proclaim good tidings of the salvation from day to day.

    04:38-04:41

Tell of his glory among the nations, his wonderful deeds among all the peoples.

    04:42-04:44

For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

    04:45-04:46

He is to be feared above all gods.

    04:47-04:51

For all the gods of the people are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.

    04:52-04:54

Splendor and majesty are before him.

    04:55-04:57

Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

    04:58-05:00

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of all peoples.

    05:01-05:03

Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

    05:04-05:07

Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name.

    05:08-05:10

Bring an offering and come into his courts.

    05:11-05:15

Worship the Lord in holy attire, or in the beauty of His holiness.

    05:16-05:18

Tremble before Him, all the earth.

    05:18-05:20

Say to the nations, "The Lord reigns.

    05:21-05:23

Indeed, the world is firmly established.

    05:23-05:27

It will not be moved." He will judge the peoples with equity.

    05:28-05:31

Let the heavens be glad and let the earth rejoice.

    05:31-05:34

Let the sea roar in all that it contains.

    05:35-05:38

Let the field exult in all that is in it.

    05:39-05:44

Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the Lord, for he is coming.

    05:45-05:47

He is coming to judge the earth.

    05:48-05:53

He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.

    05:55-05:55

    Let's pray.

    05:57-06:01

Heavenly Father, we come to your word now and it's not something that we take lightly.

    06:03-06:04

God, you're serious in your word.

    06:04-06:06

You're serious about things that you say in your word.

    06:06-06:10

So we come to Your Word looking to see what You have to say.

    06:12-06:18

Lord, I pray for this sermon that it would be honoring to You.

    06:19-06:23

I pray that I would get out of the way and that Your Holy Spirit would have His way today, Lord.

    06:24-06:31

I pray that You'd help me through this passage and that it would be beneficial and meaningful to those who hear.

    06:32-06:36

Lord, might You be exalted above all things You are worthy.

    06:37-06:39

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

    06:40-06:44

Like I said, we've got to back up a little bit and see what's happening here.

    06:45-06:51

And whenever David wrote this psalm, they were bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem.

    06:52-06:59

The Ark of the Covenant - well, let's back up a little bit more than just a few chapters before this happened.

    06:59-07:03

We're going to go the whole way back to Exodus 25.

    07:04-07:15

Well, that's like right after the Red Sea thing, the Israelites going through the Red Sea, and Moses gets the Ten Commandments.

    07:15-07:26

And in Exodus chapter 25, God tells Moses what has to happen next with them traveling through the wilderness.

    07:27-07:30

Remember, they had to go through the wilderness for what, 40 years?

    07:31-07:33

So they're staggering through the desert.

    07:34-07:36

probably going in circles, not knowing where they're going.

    07:38-07:44

And God says, "Hey, we need to build a tabernacle." You know, a tabernacle is just like a tent.

    07:44-07:45

    It's portable.

    07:45-07:48

They can pick it up and move, go to the next location.

    07:49-07:53

Well, part of that tabernacle included this thing called the Ark of the Covenant.

    07:54-07:55

I have a picture of that.

    07:56-08:00

It's kind of a, I think this is a little model that somebody took a picture of.

    08:01-08:05

And it was the best thing that I could find on the internet just to show you what it sort of looked like.

    08:06-08:13

It was about 27 inches wide, 27 inches high, 3 feet long.

    08:14-08:16

And it was made out of acacia wood.

    08:17-08:19

And they got everybody's gold together.

    08:20-08:21

    People donated gold.

    08:21-08:23

You can read that in Exodus chapter 35.

    08:23-08:27

There was a campaign to get people to participate in this.

    08:28-08:40

And so people were donating their necklaces, and their bracelets, and their rings, and they're silver and they're fine linens and they're costly perfumes and stuff all for the making of this tabernacle.

    08:40-08:55

And the Ark of the Covenant had gold inlaid on the inside and out, and it had these rings on the legs and gold poles for people to carry it.

    08:55-08:56

Weren't allowed to touch the Ark.

    08:57-09:06

On the top, you can see this covering with these angels with outstretched wings, cherubim on the top.

    09:07-09:08

They call this the mercy seat.

    09:10-09:23

Now, I probably should have known this before now, but as I was studying this, that word mercy seat is the same word as the New Testament word propitiation, which is Jesus taking God's wrath away.

    09:23-09:25

    It's satisfying God's wrath.

    09:25-09:34

And what would happen here is they would sprinkle the blood of sacrificed animals on the mercy seat or the covering, the lid.

    09:36-09:38

I just love Old Testament pictures like that.

    09:39-09:41

There's this covering for the ark.

    09:42-09:45

In the New Testament, Jesus, what did he do?

    09:46-09:48

He was our propitiation, he covered our sin.

    09:48-09:50

Not only did he cover our sin, he took it away.

    09:52-09:54

That's a picture of the Ark of the Covenant.

    09:55-10:00

There was a guy who was commissioned to build this thing.

    10:00-10:01

    His name was Bezalel.

    10:02-10:09

And people that were doing this building of the tabernacle, they weren't just some guy off the street.

    10:09-10:12

They were like the most skilled craftsmen in the land.

    10:13-10:16

And so this guy, Bezalel, put this thing together.

    10:17-10:19

And you can read about that in Exodus.

    10:19-10:20

I didn't make this stuff up.

    10:20-10:22

    It's all in the Bible.

    10:23-10:25

In fact, we're gonna learn a little bit of history.

    10:26-10:28

Did you wanna learn some history and some geography?

    10:28-10:32

We'll follow this thing through, because to me, this stuff is really exciting.

    10:34-10:39

In the ark, inside this thing, they put a couple of things.

    10:39-10:40

They put a jar of manna.

    10:41-10:43

Manna, when they were in the wilderness, they ate manna.

    10:43-10:45

That was God's way of providing for them.

    10:46-10:53

And so they put a jar of manna in there, and that was supposed to, the theologians say, that kind of represents God's provision in their lives.

    10:54-11:00

One of the other things that they put in there was Aaron's staff, his rod, and I was thinking about that.

    11:01-11:05

It must have been a shorter staff that was gonna fit in there 'cause that thing was about three feet wide.

    11:06-11:08

So maybe they put it in diagonally or something.

    11:08-11:12

I'm not sure how it fit in there, but Aaron's staff was in the Ark of the Covenant.

    11:12-11:19

And the theologians say that, you know, well, that probably represents God's guidance through the wilderness and getting them to the promised land.

    11:20-11:25

And then of course, the other big thing that was in there was the tablets of the 10 commandments.

    11:26-11:29

Moses had the tablets and they put that in there.

    11:30-11:32

It talks about what's in the ark in Hebrews 9.

    11:35-11:36

So that's a picture of the ark.

    11:37-11:37

    We know what's in it.

    11:38-11:39

    Why was the ark important?

    11:40-11:54

Well, in Numbers 7:89, it talks about how God spoke to Moses from the top of that.

    11:54-11:56

Now, I don't know how he appeared there.

    11:56-12:04

I don't know how this all happened, but the mercy seat was where God would often talk to Moses.

    12:06-12:09

And so the Ark of the Covenant was pretty important.

    12:09-12:15

The people viewed this little box as God's physical presence with them.

    12:15-12:16

This was very important to them.

    12:16-12:17

    They revered it.

    12:18-12:23

And while they were in the wilderness, they would pick this thing up, and it would go ahead of everybody.

    12:23-12:27

It was always the first thing that would go when they were traveling from place to place.

    12:29-12:30

I think I have some maps.

    12:30-12:34

If you have the first map, here's your geography lesson.

    12:34-12:39

Way down here is Egypt, where they were held captive, right?

    12:40-12:41

They run across the Red Sea.

    12:42-12:43

    That's kind of down here.

    12:43-12:45

They get over down here, and they're in the wilderness.

    12:45-12:53

They're wandering around, they don't know where they're going, they know they're supposed to get to the promised land eventually, and they come around here and start heading up this way.

    12:54-13:05

Here's the Dead Sea, they're to the east of the Dead Sea, and they come up and that green arrow, they're just about to go across the Jordan River, and you can read about this in the book of Joshua.

    13:07-13:11

When they go across the Jordan River, the most interesting thing happens.

    13:12-13:13

The guys are carrying the ark.

    13:15-13:15

    They get to the water.

    13:16-13:19

Now this is flood season, so it's not like a trickle.

    13:19-13:20

    It's not like a creek.

    13:21-13:22

    The water stops.

    13:24-13:25

    There's dry land.

    13:25-13:26

    That's kind of familiar.

    13:26-13:27

That's what happened in the Red Sea, right?

    13:28-13:29

    The water stops.

    13:30-13:34

It stands up in a heap, and they go across the river.

    13:35-13:37

The Israelites are probably like, "This is really cool.

    13:37-13:38

    This is great.

    13:39-13:46

God's like really with us." So the next thing that happens is So they go up to this place called Jericho.

    13:46-13:48

You probably know the story about Jericho.

    13:48-13:50

They go marching around this city.

    13:50-13:51

They're taking the land of Canaan.

    13:51-13:53

They're supposed to defeat their enemies.

    13:54-13:55

    So they get to Jericho.

    13:57-13:57

    What happens at Jericho?

    13:58-13:59

    They got these big walls.

    13:59-14:01

And they're going to go around six days in a row.

    14:02-14:03

    And they're carrying that ark.

    14:04-14:04

    They're carrying the ark around.

    14:05-14:07

The seventh day, they blow their trumpets.

    14:07-14:08

    They yell real loud.

    14:08-14:09

    Boom, the walls go down.

    14:09-14:12

They fall flat, just like it said it was going to happen.

    14:13-14:17

The walls fall flat, and they are like, victory.

    14:18-14:19

    God's presence.

    14:19-14:20

This ark was very important to them.

    14:21-14:25

We'll fast forward a little bit further here, and they go up to this place called Shiloh eventually.

    14:26-14:28

Now, Shiloh was where they set up this tabernacle.

    14:28-14:33

It was there for a while, and it was kind of like this epicenter of religious activity.

    14:33-14:37

And so they're feeling pretty good about now.

    14:37-14:38

    They're very confident.

    14:38-14:40

They still got to drive out some enemies.

    14:41-14:48

So they're going to go over to this place called Ebenezer now, and it's almost like, "Hey, we got our lucky charm.

    14:48-14:55

We got the ark, so we're good." And they get to Ebenezer, and something really devastating happens there.

    14:56-14:59

They go to battle against the Philistines.

    15:00-15:10

The Philistines had this area over here, and this lower southwestern area over here was is where the Philistines were.

    15:11-15:15

And Philistines is where we get the name Palestine now, that came from that word.

    15:16-15:21

So the Philistines, they take the Ark.

    15:21-15:26

They get into a battle in Ebenezer, and you can see the red part, that's when the Philistines have the Ark.

    15:27-15:29

So they take the Ark, it's captured.

    15:29-15:31

You can read about that in 1 Samuel 4.

    15:33-15:41

And they cruise on down to Ashdod, And Ashdod has this temple with this statue in it called Dagon.

    15:42-15:43

Now, Dagon was the fish god.

    15:44-15:50

They had these statues everywhere of this Dagon guy, false god, who was half man, half fish.

    15:50-15:58

And so, now I don't know if this particular statue looked like that or not, but they had-- Dagon was supposed to be the fish god.

    15:58-16:01

In fact, a little bonus here for you.

    16:01-16:01

    Nineveh?

    16:02-16:03

    Heard of Nineveh, right?

    16:03-16:04

    Who went to Nineveh?

    16:05-16:12

Jonah. Jonah went to Nineveh, and Nineveh, I think, is modern-day Mosul in Iraq.

    16:13-16:16

I could be wrong about that, but the city is still there.

    16:16-16:23

And, but Nineveh, they have unearthed many, many statues of this fish god.

    16:24-16:34

I find stuff like that really ironic, that Jonah was in the belly of a fish for three days, and he goes to a place where they're unearthing fish gods.

    16:34-16:36

    It's just weird stuff.

    16:37-16:39

But anyway, they're in Ashdod in this temple with Dagon.

    16:39-16:41

They take this ark in and they go to bed.

    16:42-16:43

They get up in the morning.

    16:44-16:49

The statue is falling or fallen before the ark, facing the ark of the covenant.

    16:50-16:55

They look at it and they, you know, they dust it off and they pick it up and they set it back up.

    16:56-17:00

And the next day they go out and Dagon has fallen toward the ark again.

    17:00-17:03

And this time his head's cut off and his arms are cut off.

    17:04-17:09

So the people of Ashdod are like, get this thing out of here.

    17:09-17:11

Like God's hand is surely against us.

    17:12-17:13

Get this ark out of here.

    17:14-17:17

And so they go down, send it to this place called Gath.

    17:18-17:22

Okay, Bible students, do you know anybody, anybody famous from the Bible who's from Gath?

    17:24-17:25

    Goliath.

    17:26-17:27

    Goliath is from Gath.

    17:28-17:34

So I'm wondering, okay, we read about Goliath and David and that whole incident.

    17:34-17:38

And I'm wondering when the Ark was there, I wonder where Goliath was.

    17:38-17:40

It's just stuff that I think about.

    17:40-17:47

They take this thing to Gath, and the people of Gath, they start breaking out in all these tumors and sickness.

    17:48-17:50

So now they're thinking, "We gotta get this thing out of here.

    17:51-17:56

The hand of God is against us." You can read about that in, I don't think I have the reference on there.

    17:56-17:58

    I think that's 1 Samuel 6.

    18:00-18:03

So they get this, they want it out of here.

    18:03-18:04

So they send it to Ekron.

    18:05-18:09

You can read about Ekron and it goes to Beth Shemesh.

    18:10-18:13

And that's where the Israelites got the ark back.

    18:13-18:16

And it goes to this place called Kiriath-Jerim.

    18:17-18:20

Now from that Ebenezer down to Beth Shemesh was about seven months.

    18:21-18:23

So it was gone for a while.

    18:23-18:27

In fact, up in Ebenezer, Eli's daughter-in-law gave birth to a baby.

    18:28-18:31

And this baby's name, she named it Ichabod.

    18:31-18:32

    You know what Ichabod means?

    18:33-18:35

The glory of the Lord has departed.

    18:36-18:42

She knew the significance of the ark being captured, and so she named her son Ichabod, the glory of the Lord has departed.

    18:42-18:44

It was gone for seven months.

    18:45-18:48

And then in Kiriath-Jerim, it stayed there for about 20 years.

    18:48-18:50

I think it was about 20 years that it was there.

    18:51-18:52

    There's some debate.

    18:52-18:57

It does mention 20 years in the Bible, but there's other things that lead people to believe that it could have been there longer.

    18:58-19:01

just timelines of when people were born and David's life and things like that.

    19:01-19:04

So we know it was there no less than 20 years.

    19:05-19:11

And David decides, I wanna get this ark back home to Jerusalem where it belongs.

    19:11-19:13

You see where we're going, we're getting to Psalm 96.

    19:15-19:22

You can read about that, this guy named Uzzah in 2 Samuel 6.

    19:24-19:32

Uzzah is an interesting story where they have the ark on some ox carts, and the ark was about to tip over.

    19:33-19:34

I don't know if they were on some rocks.

    19:35-19:42

And I don't know what his thinking was or what was going on in his mind, but he reached out to steady the ark, and God struck him dead.

    19:43-19:51

And it just displayed the seriousness of this box that had these items in it, the presence of God.

    19:52-19:53

You weren't supposed to touch that.

    19:54-20:01

Now, it seems severe to strike this guy dead, but maybe God was gonna perform a miracle there that Uzzah prevented.

    20:02-20:06

He just reached out and indiscriminately grabs the ark and he gets struck dead.

    20:07-20:09

    So people were afraid there.

    20:10-20:14

They're thinking, "Oh my goodness." So it stayed at a couple houses for a while.

    20:14-20:24

And then it's coming into Jerusalem And David starts to celebrate 1 Chronicles 16.

    20:25-20:34

David writes this unbelievable hymn of praise and worship and celebration that is Psalm 96.

    20:35-20:37

And so that's where we're at.

    20:39-20:40

    We're in Psalm 96 today.

    20:41-20:45

That's the story of how the Psalm came about.

    20:46-20:52

just wasn't some kind of willy -nilly thought pattern that happened in David's mind.

    20:52-20:55

There was something going on behind the scenes and this is what happened.

    20:56-21:03

So if we go into Psalm 96, let's just go through a couple of things here and see how this will impact our worship.

    21:04-21:13

First thing on your outline, we sing and we witness because he is magnificent and he is creator.

    21:15-21:17

Now here at Harvest Bible Chapel, we have some pillars.

    21:17-21:22

And our second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus Christ through worship.

    21:23-21:24

And we did that this morning.

    21:25-21:27

    We were singing, right?

    21:27-21:30

I mean, it was, I look forward to that every week.

    21:30-21:31

I look forward to coming here to sing.

    21:32-21:33

We place a high premium on that.

    21:35-21:38

He says here, sing a, I'm sorry, sing to the Lord a new song.

    21:39-21:40

Sing to the Lord all the earth.

    21:40-21:42

Sing to the Lord and bless his name.

    21:43-21:49

You know, we sing a lot of new songs here, and there's nobody that likes old hymns better than me.

    21:49-21:50

    They're rich in doctrine.

    21:50-21:54

They have a lot of truth in them, and we do sing some of those sometimes.

    21:55-21:57

But there's something about these new songs, too, that are just amazing.

    21:58-22:09

And I remember when we first started coming to church here, Pastor Jeff preached a sermon on the DNA of the church, and the second sermon was about the second pillar, lifting high the name of Jesus in worship.

    22:09-22:13

And he said, you know, and he referenced this verse, sing to the Lord a new song?

    22:14-22:15

Why do we sing new songs?

    22:16-22:18

    Because God loves new things.

    22:19-22:21

God loves new things, and I can prove that to you.

    22:21-22:25

In 2 Corinthians 5:17, what does it say?

    22:25-22:27

If anyone is in Christ, he is a what?

    22:29-22:30

    A new creation.

    22:30-22:32

If anyone is in Christ, he's a new creation.

    22:33-22:37

You can look in Revelation, and what's God gonna create there?

    22:37-22:39

A new heavens and a new earth, right?

    22:39-22:40

    He loves new things.

    22:41-22:42

    He loves new songs.

    22:42-22:44

It's okay to sing new songs.

    22:45-22:46

    Fresh expressions of praise.

    22:47-22:48

    Those are okay.

    22:48-22:49

    We like those.

    22:49-22:50

    God likes those.

    22:52-22:52

    So we sing.

    22:53-22:54

The second thing is we witness.

    22:57-23:07

Here he says, "Proclaim good tidings of salvation from day to day." I love this phrase here 'cause it's much bigger than just proclaim.

    23:08-23:15

This phrase here means exposing beauty through announcement.

    23:17-23:17

    Think of a wedding.

    23:18-23:19

Has anybody been to a wedding?

    23:20-23:21

Yeah, a lot of us have been to a wedding.

    23:21-23:23

Most of us have been in a wedding, at a wedding.

    23:24-23:26

Some of us have been in weddings.

    23:26-23:34

If you think about the groom, he's up on the front with his guys, and there's some bridesmaids and everything.

    23:34-23:36

    And where's the bride?

    23:37-23:39

    Well, she's out back, usually.

    23:39-23:43

She's waiting for the doors to open, and then the processional starts.

    23:44-23:50

Here comes the bride or whatever anthem she might choose, and all of a sudden, the doors open up.

    23:51-23:59

That processional is proclaiming-- it's getting ready to expose the beauty of this bride coming down the aisle.

    24:00-24:07

I remember at our wedding when the door opened up and I looked out, and my bride was the most beautiful woman that I had ever seen.

    24:08-24:12

There's something about a wedding, brides are beautiful, and this is what this is talking about here.

    24:14-24:19

When we proclaim God's salvation, we're exposing his beauty.

    24:20-24:24

We're letting people know about the beauty of salvation.

    24:25-24:27

Well, this word salvation here is deliverance.

    24:28-24:30

Has God delivered you from anything?

    24:32-24:38

If you've been delivered from, say, alcoholism, you need to tell people about that.

    24:39-24:42

You need to tell people that God did that, God delivered you from that.

    24:43-24:50

Have you been delivered from drugs or any situation like that?

    24:50-24:53

We need to tell people about that, that God did this to us.

    24:54-24:59

What about fear or anxiety or impatience?

    25:00-25:01

And we could go down the list.

    25:01-25:03

Has God delivered you from those things as a Christian?

    25:04-25:06

Is He delivering you from them?

    25:06-25:08

Maybe we still struggle with some of that stuff.

    25:09-25:25

We need to tell people, if we've been delivered, especially that we've been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God's glorious light, that's the biggest deliverance of them all, right?

    25:25-25:28

We were lost and headed to hell, but God saved us.

    25:28-25:29

    He delivered us.

    25:30-25:32

He delivered us from the consequences of our sin.

    25:33-25:36

That is an eternal conscious punishment in hell.

    25:38-25:40

We need to tell people about that.

    25:40-25:41

And that's what this is saying here.

    25:42-25:43

    We need to proclaim that.

    25:43-25:48

We need to expose His beauty by letting people see what He's done for us.

    25:49-25:55

Here's how you would maybe throw water on the flames of evangelism.

    25:56-26:04

So you use those situations enter into a discussion about the gospel, that, oh, I was a sinner.

    26:05-26:08

I was headed to hell, and the wages of sin is death.

    26:09-26:12

But the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    26:13-26:20

If anyone confesses Jesus as Lord and believes in their heart that God raised them from the dead, they'll be saved, they'll be delivered.

    26:21-26:23

We can enter into conversations like that.

    26:25-26:26

But you know how to throw water on that?

    26:26-26:27

I'll give you a couple things.

    26:29-26:35

If you don't have any enthusiasm, no enthusiasm, Jesus, he's just not exciting to me.

    26:37-26:40

It's kind of boring actually, the Bible is kind of boring.

    26:41-26:47

If you don't want people to listen to your message, just have no enthusiasm and they'll tune you out.

    26:47-26:48

    How about this one?

    26:49-26:51

    You're being confusing or indirect.

    26:52-26:53

We need to speak with conviction and clarity.

    26:55-26:56

We're not beating around the bush here.

    26:56-26:58

This is a life and death message.

    26:58-26:59

We don't need to beat around the bush.

    27:01-27:05

Is anybody impressed with your Jesus if you're timid about him?

    27:07-27:10

Who wants that Jesus that we're ashamed of?

    27:10-27:11

    Who would want that?

    27:12-27:14

So we need to be direct.

    27:14-27:15

We don't need to be confusing.

    27:16-27:17

    And how about this one?

    27:18-27:18

    Pride.

    27:19-27:20

    I'll say this gently.

    27:21-27:22

Nobody cares how much you know.

    27:23-27:24

    They really don't.

    27:24-27:30

You could quote them 100 scriptures and show them how much you know about the Bible.

    27:31-27:33

People really don't care about that, seriously.

    27:34-27:35

They want to know that you care.

    27:36-27:38

We need to show them that we're committed to the truth.

    27:39-27:40

    We need to be knowledgeable.

    27:41-27:48

But we need to be careful about blasting them with truth bombs because we want to win an argument.

    27:50-27:55

So no enthusiasm, being confusing or indirect, pride.

    27:56-27:58

And here's another one, and there could be some more.

    27:59-28:03

But this will throw the water on the flames of your evangelism, hypocrisy.

    28:05-28:12

If you're a hypocrite, believe me, people know when you're being a hypocrite, it's like written all over your face most of the time.

    28:12-28:14

Nobody wants to hear what you have to say.

    28:15-28:17

If you're a hypocrite, they don't want that, Jesus.

    28:18-28:21

If Jesus didn't fix you of that, nobody wants that.

    28:23-28:23

    So how do we share?

    28:24-28:25

    We just tell our story.

    28:26-28:27

    We can tell.

    28:27-28:33

It even says here, I will tell of his glory among the nations and his wonderful deeds.

    28:34-28:36

This is an interesting word here.

    28:37-28:41

It means to enumerate or keep score, keep track of.

    28:42-28:44

I pictured like these little hash marks.

    28:44-28:45

    You know, you're keeping score.

    28:47-28:49

It's telling people what God did in your life.

    28:50-28:52

I don't know, you could come up with a hundred examples.

    28:52-28:56

"Oh wow, did you see the rainbow?

    28:56-28:58

That was an amazing rainbow, I love rainbows.

    28:58-29:02

You know, God put that there." Or, "Man, I was really sick.

    29:02-29:13

I had the flu and I prayed and it just seemed like God was..." We tell people, we're enumerating, we're recounting to people what God did for us.

    29:14-29:16

That's what he's telling here, tell of his glory.

    29:17-29:20

Tell of these things that God has done.

    29:20-29:23

Bring them into conversation when you're talking to people.

    29:24-29:27

You could do things like, let somebody ask you how you're doing.

    29:27-29:28

God's been so good to us.

    29:29-29:29

    He's really blessed us.

    29:29-29:31

He's given us a great family.

    29:31-29:32

    He's provided for us.

    29:33-29:38

If the topic comes up at work, you won't believe what I just learned today in the Scriptures.

    29:39-29:40

Telling people what you're thankful for.

    29:42-29:43

I'm so thankful for my home.

    29:44-29:46

God provided a home for us.

    29:46-29:48

You can bring those into conversations.

    29:48-29:54

That's what he's talking about here when he says, "Tell of His glory among the nations." His wonderful deeds among all the people.

    29:55-29:56

    And why is that?

    29:57-29:58

    Because He's magnificent.

    29:59-30:01

    He's Creator. He's magnificent.

    30:01-30:02

He launches into this thing here.

    30:02-30:05

He says, "Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

    30:05-30:07

He is to be feared above all gods.

    30:09-30:14

For all the gods of the peoples are idols." Back then they had a few gods, false gods.

    30:14-30:16

They had Baals. They called them Baal.

    30:17-30:42

the supposed sun god. They had Ashtoreth, it was the female counterpart of Veil, the moon goddess. They had this god named Molech and they would sacrifice children, live children, to this false god Molech. And they had Dagon, we saw Dagon, the fish god. They had numerous gods. We have some of that.

    30:42-30:46

We have gods in our own lives, false gods.

    30:47-30:50

I love the play on words in verse 5.

    30:50-30:51

    This is pretty cool.

    30:52-31:00

He says, "All the gods of the peoples are idols." There are no less than 18 words for the word "idol" in the Old Testament.

    31:01-31:03

I couldn't believe how many words there were.

    31:03-31:06

And for the English language, we only had one word for it.

    31:06-31:20

There's words like shame, dung, refuse, a shadow, a statue, a shape, a device, a molten image.

    31:21-31:25

This idol that was spoken of here wasn't any of those words.

    31:25-31:34

It's the word "nothingness" or "non -existent." What he's saying there is those gods of the people, They're nothing.

    31:36-31:36

    They're nothing.

    31:38-31:39

But here's the play on words.

    31:40-31:41

    What's he say next?

    31:42-31:46

"But God made the heavens." What did God make the heavens out of?

    31:48-31:48

    Nothing.

    31:49-31:51

He created everything that you see out of nothing.

    31:52-31:54

    He's calling these idols nothing.

    31:55-31:56

Just an interesting choice of words.

    31:57-32:10

He goes, "Your idols are nothing." "Oh yeah, I made the heavens out of nothing." "Splendor and majesty are before Him, strength and beauty are in His sanctuary." This is speaking of His magnificence.

    32:11-32:11

    Look at these words.

    32:12-32:15

We sang about this stuff just minutes ago.

    32:16-32:20

    Splendor, majesty, strength, beauty.

    32:22-32:28

When I think of His power here, His strength, just even that rain out there today.

    32:29-32:31

When's the last time you guys made rain like that?

    32:33-32:38

When's the last time we made thunder and lightning?

    32:39-32:41

And when's the last time you made a rainbow?

    32:43-32:46

I've seen a lot of rainbows, and I never made one like that.

    32:47-32:53

I mean, well, our family, we took a vacation in 2013 where we took a tour around the country.

    32:54-32:54

    Like, we looked.

    32:55-33:05

We saw the Redwood Forest and the Pacific Coast Highway, and we went horseback riding in Wyoming.

    33:05-33:10

And we were coming through the South, and we were on our way home from California.

    33:11-33:14

When we went through Las Vegas, Nevada, it was 118 degrees.

    33:16-33:17

    And I'm thinking, wow.

    33:18-33:19

First of all, that's really hot.

    33:19-33:23

And secondly, like, wow, God did this heat.

    33:23-33:24

    He made the heat.

    33:25-33:31

But the most interesting thing happened to us when we were riding through New Mexico.

    33:32-33:33

And you can look this up on the internet.

    33:33-33:34

    This is amazing.

    33:34-33:45

On July 4 of 2013, if you get on your devices and look up Santa Rosa hailstorm, you'll see some pictures come up on there.

    33:46-33:47

We were there when that happened.

    33:48-33:49

    We were on the highway.

    33:51-33:52

And all of a sudden, it was 9 o'clock at night.

    33:53-33:56

We're tired, we have to go to the bathroom, we just want to get to the hotel.

    33:57-33:58

We're trying to get to Amarillo, Texas.

    33:59-34:01

We didn't have a hotel yet, we were just kind of winging it.

    34:02-34:05

So we pull up, we can see the city lights of Santa Rosa.

    34:06-34:08

You know, we had just come from 118 degrees.

    34:09-34:11

    It's probably 90 degrees at 9 o'clock at night.

    34:12-34:13

    And the traffic stops.

    34:14-34:15

    It's a dead stop.

    34:17-34:18

    It's 9 o'clock at night.

    34:18-34:20

We didn't move one inch until midnight.

    34:21-34:31

nobody knew what was going on. We were there for three hours. We start creeping along and we get to Santa Rosa and there were six inches of hail on the ground.

    34:33-34:40

Leftover from two feet of hail, golf ball-sized. And it was just in Santa Rosa.

    34:40-35:18

Santa Rosa is like maybe the size of Butler. It's not real big. Just in the city and right on the outskirts of the city where the highway went past, two feet golf ball size hail. Now aside from the damage and maybe some injuries that might have happened from that, God is awesome. I never made two-inch hail before. Golf ball size hail. I never made that before. I couldn't believe it. It was like we get there and we're driving like we're driving in Pittsburgh. People were just like, they're afraid, they don't get snow down there. I'm like, I see that stuff all the time.

    35:19-35:23

But I'm looking at that, I'm like, that's the strength and power and beauty of God.

    35:24-35:26

    It was an amazing thing.

    35:28-35:31

We need to tell people about this amazing God.

    35:32-35:33

It's part of how we worship him.

    35:35-35:38

Okay, next one, and I gotta hurry along here.

    35:39-35:44

We acknowledge, we give, and we tremble because he is sovereign and he is judge.

    35:45-35:47

We're gonna talk about the judge thing at the end.

    35:48-35:50

    But acknowledge, he says ascribe.

    35:52-35:53

    He says ascribe here.

    35:55-36:03

The definition of ascribe is to humbly give credit and acknowledgement to God for the attributes and characteristics that already belong to him.

    36:04-36:05

    I'll say that again.

    36:06-36:14

Humbly give credit and acknowledgement to God for the attributes and characteristics that already belong to him.

    36:15-36:18

He says here, "Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples.

    36:18-36:20

Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.

    36:21-36:28

Ascribe to the Lord the glory of His name." We're not giving Him strength.

    36:28-36:29

    He already has that, right?

    36:30-36:32

We're just acknowledging that He is that God.

    36:33-36:34

That's what it means to ascribe.

    36:35-36:36

    It's an acknowledgment.

    36:38-36:39

And then how about this word "give"?

    36:39-36:46

He says, "Bring an offering and come into His courts." Now is he talking about passing that offering thing around?

    36:47-36:48

    Yeah, that's part of it.

    36:49-36:50

But it's just a part of it.

    36:51-36:52

    He wants all of you.

    36:52-36:54

He wants you to give of yourself.

    36:55-36:59

Your time, your talents, your offering, your money.

    36:59-37:00

    He wants you to give.

    37:01-37:03

What he's saying here, it's a command really.

    37:03-37:07

He says, "Bring an offering and come into his courts.

    37:08-37:13

Worship the Lord in holy attire." and it says holy attire.

    37:15-37:23

The translation of this really should be something like, what this means is, maybe a better rendering is, worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness.

    37:23-37:30

This doesn't mean like, OK, I'm going to go worship the Lord, so I got to go get my holy-- my suit and my tie and everything.

    37:30-37:31

    I got to look nice.

    37:31-37:33

If you want to do that, that's OK.

    37:33-37:34

But that's not what that's saying here.

    37:34-37:36

It's saying, worship the Lord in his beauty.

    37:37-37:39

He's the one that's got the holy attire on.

    37:39-37:41

    He's the one that's beautiful.

    37:41-37:42

    we're worshiping him.

    37:43-37:49

He says, "Tremble before him all the earth." You know what trembling is?

    37:51-37:54

Trembling is like a palpitation of the heart.

    37:56-37:57

You just, you get this feeling in your heart.

    37:58-38:02

Like, I was talking to Sherry a little bit before this.

    38:02-38:05

When you get up here and speak, it's no small thing, anytime.

    38:06-38:09

You know what, going into jail or whatever, it's not a small thing.

    38:09-38:12

And so, you know, you get a little bit of butterflies in there.

    38:13-38:15

Your heart's palpitating, it's beating hard.

    38:16-38:17

    That's what he's saying here.

    38:18-38:22

You know, our hearts are supposed to palpitate when we worship Him.

    38:22-38:23

    It's supposed to beat hard.

    38:26-38:32

When you open up your Bible, think about, this is God's Word to you.

    38:33-38:36

Like, every time we open up the Bible, we should be trembling.

    38:37-38:39

This is a great gift that God has given you.

    38:41-38:46

Yes, it was written by 40 men or something, over 1,500 years.

    38:48-38:49

You know, people say, "Oh, that was a thing.

    38:49-38:54

It was written by men." Well, yeah, they wrote it down, but God told them what to say.

    38:54-38:56

They wrote in their own personalities.

    38:56-39:01

They wrote from different moods, sadness, happiness.

    39:02-39:05

There were different people that wrote the Bible.

    39:05-39:06

There were kings. There were prophets.

    39:06-39:16

there were statesmen, there were shepherds, there were doctors and tax collectors, and it came from the pen of different men.

    39:17-39:21

But it's God's word, this is God speaking to us.

    39:23-39:28

He's telling us who he is, what he expects of us, what kind of worship he wants.

    39:30-39:30

    We tremble.

    39:32-39:33

    Our heart starts to beat.

    39:35-39:51

These guys that built that tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant, they were bringing this stuff into the collection place as a willing thing.

    39:52-39:55

This was something that they wanted to do out of their own hearts.

    39:55-39:57

I imagine the gravity of that.

    39:58-40:05

"Hey, God told us to build this thing." And they bring all this stuff back to this passage about bringing an offering.

    40:07-40:08

    God is sovereign.

    40:09-40:10

That's the next part of this.

    40:10-40:11

    He's sovereign.

    40:11-40:12

    He reigns over all.

    40:13-40:22

He says here, "Say to the nations," in verse 10, "The Lord reigns." That's it, he reigns, he's in charge.

    40:23-40:24

    He is in charge.

    40:24-40:28

Sometimes it doesn't look like, things are, you know, the wheels are coming off, it seems.

    40:30-40:31

But God is still on the throne, he reigns.

    40:32-40:33

    He's still sovereign.

    40:34-40:35

    And he is judge.

    40:35-40:37

And we're going to hit judge here in a couple seconds.

    40:39-40:45

Last point here, we rejoice and we celebrate, because he is righteous and he is faithful.

    40:48-40:50

Look at these verses here at the end.

    40:51-40:53

    "Let the peoples be glad.

    40:54-40:55

    Let the earth rejoice.

    40:56-40:59

Let the sea roar in all it contains.

    41:01-41:03

Let the field exult and all that is in it.

    41:04-41:08

And the trees of the forest will sing for joy, for the Lord is coming.

    41:08-41:13

And He is coming to judge the earth, and He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in faithfulness.

    41:15-41:19

This exult, this word exult, it's like jumping for joy or leaping for joy.

    41:20-41:22

In fact, go back to the beginning when I was talking about David.

    41:23-41:32

Remember when he came into Jerusalem and he was dancing and he was jumping and leaping, and he was so happy that the ark was finally home.

    41:33-41:43

And his wife, Mikkel, Saul's daughter, she looks at him out from the window and it says in the Bible that she despised him for that.

    41:44-41:56

And when they saw each other a little bit later, she says, "Wow, look how the king of Israel has distinguished himself.

    41:57-41:58

Look at what you were doing out there.

    41:58-42:00

    Look how you distinguished yourself.

    42:02-42:09

And I love what David said in I think it's 2 Samuel 6:21.

    42:10-42:13

From the window of his house, his wife saw him leaping.

    42:14-42:16

She was pretty upset about that.

    42:16-42:37

Says, "Oh, how the king has distinguished himself as one of the foolish ones." And David said this, before the Lord who chose me above your father's house, therefore I will celebrate." When I read that verse, I thought, here's a guy, he didn't care what people thought about his worship.

    42:38-42:43

Even his own wife, his own family, she's looking at him, despising him.

    42:44-42:45

And he says, you know what?

    42:45-42:47

This was, it was for the Lord.

    42:48-42:50

We brought this ark into Jerusalem for the Lord.

    42:51-42:52

    I was happy.

    42:53-42:54

And I'm going to dance before the Lord.

    42:57-43:02

And so, is that how our worship is?

    43:02-43:05

Do we care what other people think around us?

    43:05-43:08

As long as we're worshipping God in a biblical way.

    43:09-43:20

If we're doing some crazy things that maybe aren't reverent, or maybe out of line as far as Scripture goes, then okay, that's probably wrong.

    43:22-43:45

But if we look at this passage here in Psalm 96 and see how we're supposed to worship God by singing and proclaiming and ascribing about His splendor and beauty and majesty and trembling before Him and celebrating, if we're all in the biblical bounds here, we don't need to care what other people are thinking, right?

    43:46-43:48

We have a fairly diverse church.

    43:49-43:50

Some people like to raise their hands.

    43:51-43:52

    That's okay.

    43:52-43:55

You know, I have traditionally not been a hand raiser, but maybe I should be.

    43:56-43:59

Maybe I should do that, 'cause sometimes I wanna do that.

    43:59-44:04

I came from a really, really conservative background, and sometimes I feel awkward doing that.

    44:04-44:04

    But you know what?

    44:06-44:10

Not to be mean to you guys, but after studying this, I don't care what you think about that anymore.

    44:11-44:16

People can make fun of me, but I'm gonna praise the Lord the way I want to, and we should do that.

    44:17-44:19

If you're going to clap during a song, that's okay.

    44:20-44:23

Tap your foot however you want to worship.

    44:24-44:25

We can't make you not do that.

    44:27-44:37

If we're not passionate in our worship, I'm thinking we might be in a little bit of trouble because guess what we're going to be doing for millions of years in heaven?

    44:39-44:44

If singing and worship is not your thing, I don't think you're gonna like heaven.

    44:45-44:46

'Cause that's what we're doing there.

    44:48-45:00

I loved the one song we were singing, and I scribbled this down real quick, where it says, I think it was the last song there, our eyes will look upon his glorious face.

    45:03-45:11

When we're in heaven, for all those millions of years, we're gonna be looking at his glorious face.

    45:13-45:14

    That's worthy of worship.

    45:15-45:17

He says he's going to judge the world in righteousness.

    45:18-45:21

Now, many of you guys know that I do the prison stuff.

    45:22-45:26

A couple of you guys have gone in, Jeff and I, Darren, I know Ben has been in.

    45:27-45:28

It's a great ministry, we love doing that.

    45:29-45:32

But I encounter guys who are in trouble with the law, obviously.

    45:33-45:40

And I want you to imagine that you are in trouble with the law and you have to go before the judge.

    45:42-45:45

You are at the judge's mercy.

    45:46-45:50

Whatever sentence he hands down, that's your sentence.

    45:51-45:56

So I tell the guys all the time, God is a judge.

    45:57-46:01

They have rap sheets as long as their arm in some cases.

    46:02-46:04

And the judge looks at that, and he's like, you know what?

    46:05-46:06

    Off to the pokey.

    46:06-46:07

    You're going to jail.

    46:07-46:12

    I was just talking to a guy Friday, and I said, "Where's so-and-so and where's so-and-so?

    46:13-46:22

Where are these guys at now?" "Oh yeah, they went to state 25 to 50 years." This guy, 12 to 24 years.

    46:23-46:25

They've been before the judge and they got sentenced.

    46:26-46:31

We too have a rap sheet because we're sinners.

    46:32-46:49

In Colossians 2, it talks about the decrees, their certificate of death, or death and decrees that are against us, but they were nailed to the cross, Jesus took them out of the way.

    46:52-46:56

So when we appear before the judge, he's gonna set all things right, right?

    46:56-47:00

It says here that he's righteous and he's faithful.

    47:01-47:02

He's all about keeping his promises.

    47:03-47:04

    He's faithful.

    47:04-47:05

He's going to keep his promise.

    47:06-47:15

And when he says that, "Depart from me," he's sentenced people to an eternal conscious punishment in a real place called hell.

    47:16-47:18

And we don't want people to go there.

    47:19-47:20

We don't want people to go there.

    47:21-47:26

And so, we talked about this earlier, we evangelize, we tell people, it's part of our worship.

    47:28-47:37

But he has taken the decrees that were against you What's not to celebrate?

    47:38-47:40

That's the ultimate thing to celebrate.

    47:41-47:46

That our sins have been taken from the East to the West and removed from us.

    47:47-47:48

    They're gone.

    47:50-47:53

But it says that God will remember them no more.

    47:54-47:55

He'll remember your sins no more.

    47:56-47:57

It's not that he has a bad memory.

    47:58-47:59

He's not going to bring them up to you again.

    47:59-48:01

Jesus took them out of the way.

    48:01-48:03

    Jesus took our place.

    48:03-48:04

    He was our substitute.

    48:06-48:10

I tell the guys in the jail, somebody had to pay for your crime.

    48:11-48:11

    And it was you.

    48:13-48:15

And the same with our sin.

    48:15-48:16

Somebody has to pay for that.

    48:17-48:22

And it will be you if you don't let Jesus do it.

    48:22-48:28

Jesus came, bled, suffered, died on the cross as your substitute.

    48:29-48:35

He looks at us as righteousness We put our faith and trust and our hope in His Son, Jesus Christ.

    48:35-48:41

And so why I say that is that's why we worship God.

    48:41-48:43

That's why we're not ashamed to worship God.

    48:45-48:51

When we've been there 10 ,000 years, you know this verse in the song, right?

    48:52-48:59

I was looking at this song this week, and this verse never clicked with me until this week.

    49:01-49:01

    Think about this.

    49:02-49:03

    It boggles your mind.

    49:04-49:13

When we've been there 10,000 years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun.

    49:15-49:19

You can be there 10,000 years and you haven't lost one day of worship.

    49:20-49:26

You're just going to keep doing it for another 10,000, for another 10,000, for a million.

    49:27-49:29

And there's no days being knocked off.

    49:29-49:31

It's like, I still have forever.

    49:31-49:32

    We still have forever.

    49:32-49:40

When we've been there 10,000 years, bright, shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we first begun.

    49:42-49:42

    Let's pray.

    49:43-49:47

Heavenly Father, we have so much to praise You for.

    49:48-49:53

We have so much to give You honor and worship You for.

    49:54-49:57

Lord, You took our sins and cast them into the sea.

    49:58-49:59

    The depths of the sea.

    49:59-50:02

took them as far from the east as to the west.

    50:03-50:14

That alone, if you never did one more thing for us, God, you did more than enough by offering your Son, giving Him to those who would receive Him by faith.

    50:18-50:27

Lord, that's just amazing that you would do that for me and for my friends here, Lord, that you would do that.

    50:28-50:42

Lord, I pray that we would sing our lungs out because of our great love for you.

    50:43-50:50

Lord, forgive us of our half-hearted, lukewarm singing, praising you, our worship Lord.

    50:51-50:56

Forgive us of not loving you with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

    50:56-51:09

Lord, I pray we would have a reasonable rekindled, fresh look at who you are, and just give you all the praise, because Lord, You are so worthy.

    51:10-51:14

Thank You, Lord, for the opportunity to look at Your Word this morning.

    51:14-51:15

    You are awesome.

    51:17-51:18

    And we acknowledge that today.

    51:19-51:20

    In Jesus' name, Amen.

Power and Witness - Power in Obedience

Open up your Bibles with me please to Acts chapter 5.

    00:07-00:11

Acts chapter 5, we're going to be picking up in verse 12.

    00:11-00:23

And you know while you're doing what you do throughout the week, I have the incredible privilege of studying God's Word through the week.

    00:23-00:29

And I thank you so much because you support me so that I'm able to feed my family.

    00:29-00:34

I can devote my time to the study of God's Word, and that really means a lot to me.

    00:35-00:44

And I was studying this passage we're going to be looking at this week, and as every week when I'm studying the passage, my main thing is, what is this passage saying?

    00:44-00:47

What is the theme of the passage?

    00:47-01:03

Because I'm going to be standing up in front of people saying, "This is what this passage is about." And I read this passage several times, And something a little different happened to me this week as I was studying this passage.

    01:03-01:10

I actually, as I was reading it, spoiler alert, there are a lot of crazy things happening in this passage.

    01:10-01:12

    Just absolutely crazy things.

    01:13-01:22

And as I'm reading it and following the adventures of the apostles here, my mind was actually writing a soundtrack.

    01:22-01:33

Like, if I was making a movie about this passage, I had the perfect song that would go on the soundtrack when we get to this part.

    01:34-01:43

And a few months ago, we were in Acts chapter 1, we were talking about the disciples were waiting for the coming of the Holy Spirit as Jesus promised.

    01:44-01:50

And if you recall, I had sung "Waiting is the Hardest Part" by Tom Petty.

    01:50-01:51

    Do you remember that?

    01:52-01:59

And I would like to tell you that I've gotten lots of cards and letters and emails and requesting that I do that again, but I haven't gotten one.

    02:01-02:02

And I forgive you for that.

    02:05-02:08

But I couldn't help it as I was reading this passage. You're going to see this. We're going to walk through this.

    02:09-02:11

But I couldn't help it as I was looking through this passage.

    02:11-02:20

There was, believe it or not, there was another Tom Petty song that just kept playing in my head as I'm reading this passage.

    02:21-03:13

and the song is i want you to help me okay i'm gonna i'm missing the first line and then i want you to jump in with me and i believe me up here are you i said you're not really be a priority actually no i wall back now no i you can stand me up at the gates of hell you know that's biblical jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail against his church and i'm not saying that on petty wrote a him i'm not saying that i'm just saying he kind of borrowed some jesus language here but i wall back down would you like me to keep saying that One, that's enough.

    03:13-03:16

    I got just one life.

    03:16-03:16

    Okay, all right.

    03:17-03:22

Anyways, that is the soundtrack of this passage.

    03:23-03:37

You see, these disciples, we're going to be walking through this passage here, but they had this attitude that no matter what was happening to them, crazy things, their attitude was consistently, I am not going to back down.

    03:39-03:41

And something has to fuel that attitude.

    03:42-03:44

    What was in these men?

    03:45-03:52

What mindset did these men have that had them so laser focused and unwavering?

    03:53-03:55

And we see exactly what it is.

    03:57-04:30

Skip ahead, look at verse 29, when Peter says, "We must obey God rather than men." Again, Peter, he says, "We are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit," look at this last phrase, "whom God has given to those who obey Him." It seems to me that this theme that was on Peter's mind and on the apostles' mind was coming out in his sermon.

    04:31-04:39

The mindset that drove the apostles was, "We must obey God rather than men." And I would commend that to you.

    04:39-04:41

That should be a memory verse for you this week.

    04:42-04:44

It's short. You can remember that.

    04:44-04:48

But this was a thing that drove them.

    04:48-04:51

A simple statement that you need to get down.

    04:51-04:54

We must obey God rather than men.

    04:54-04:55

    Who are you obeying?

    04:56-04:59

Day in, day out in your life, in your family, in your ministry.

    05:00-05:01

    Who are you obeying?

    05:03-05:05

Because honestly, this is missing from the church today.

    05:05-05:07

We live in a day of information.

    05:07-05:12

You can get on the Internet and read sermons from John Piper and Charles Spurgeon.

    05:12-05:19

You can get podcasts and webcasts and books and magazines and articles and things sent to your email and things mailed to your house.

    05:19-05:24

You can get information, Bible information, everywhere.

    05:24-05:31

But how can I incorporate these truths into everyday living?

    05:31-05:32

    See, that's what's missing.

    05:34-05:37

We know some things. The problem is we're not applying these things.

    05:38-05:47

We see these disciples were so focused on obedience to the mission, in prayer, to authenticity.

    05:48-06:01

And we're going to see in this passage we're looking at today what happens when God's people have a mindset of "We must obey God rather than men." You apply God's Word, you're going to see God's power.

    06:03-06:12

Here at Harvest Bible Chapel, you know, we talk so much about worship, and prayer and giving and studying the Word, and all of these things we talk about as we walk through God's Word.

    06:13-06:17

But I'd like to remind you of the words of Jesus in John 13:17.

    06:18-06:27

Jesus said, "If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.

    06:29-06:34

Knowing God's Word does you no good unless you apply God's Word.

    06:35-07:07

James speaks much on that subject. But for today, the title of your outline, I want you to jot some notes down. Obedience. I won't back down. Do you have that attitude? I won't back down. Well, let's look at the text. I won't back down, but, number one, I will be obedient and trust God with the results. I will be and trust God with the results.

    07:08-07:09

    Look at verse 12.

    07:10-07:21

It says, "Now many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people by the hands of the apostles." Again, we've spoken about this several times as we've gone through Acts.

    07:21-07:27

The apostles were given the ability by God to perform signs and wonders to authenticate their message.

    07:27-07:29

This was a turning point in history.

    07:30-07:35

Jesus ushered in the new covenant and the promised Holy Spirit had come.

    07:36-07:47

And to make such a bold claim that God has enacted this new thing that He promised in the Old Testament, God backed it up with signs and wonders in these messengers.

    07:48-07:58

It says, "And they were all together in Solomon's portico." Actually, Peter preached his second sermon there in Acts 3:11.

    07:58-08:01

That must have been a place in the temple where they like to hang out.

    08:03-08:10

So last week, we saw God pursuing purity in the church in dramatic fashion.

    08:10-08:13

If you were here last week, we talked about Ananias and Sapphira.

    08:13-08:16

We'll pick that up again here.

    08:17-08:21

And in this passage, we see that the apostles perform signs and wonders.

    08:22-08:31

But I want you to see in the passage what resulted between God's purifying the church and the apostles doing the signs and wonders.

    08:31-08:32

    Look at verse 13.

    08:34-08:44

It says, "None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high esteem." Now, who are the rest?

    08:45-08:48

This is talking about unbelievers, and catch this.

    08:50-09:00

The Bible's telling us that during these days of the early church, when you would just pull people on the street, and say, "What do you think about the church?" This was the answer.

    09:01-09:03

You know, we really respect those people.

    09:04-09:05

We think very highly of them.

    09:06-09:10

"Why don't you go to that church?" There is no way I am ever going to that church.

    09:11-09:12

    Absolutely not. I respect them.

    09:12-09:16

And then, "Why don't you go there?" There is no way. I'm not going.

    09:16-09:24

Now, why do you think these people had so much respect for the church, but they refused to go?

    09:24-09:25

Why do you think that is?

    09:26-09:27

    I have a thought.

    09:29-09:32

Do you think maybe it's because word got out about Ananias and Sapphira?

    09:32-09:34

Do you think that might have something to do with it?

    09:35-09:41

In the previous passage last week we talked about these people, husband and wife, that they had this plan, they were going to lie to the church.

    09:42-09:53

"Yeah, here's all the money." And Peter's like, "Is that all the money?" "Yeah, this is all the money. You just lied to God." Remember, their sin wasn't that they kept money back, their sin was that they lied about it, they're being hypocritical.

    09:53-09:56

and God takes hypocrisy very seriously.

    09:58-10:00

Ananias struck dead, carried out by the young men.

    10:01-10:02

His wife comes in three hours later.

    10:02-10:10

"Hey guys, what's going on?" Peter's like, "Yeah, how much money did you get for the land?" And she kept the lie going.

    10:10-10:16

And Peter's like, "Yeah, it didn't work out so well for your husband either." And she dropped over dead and was carried out.

    10:16-10:19

That was... Do you think word got out about that?

    10:20-10:20

    I think it did.

    10:20-10:29

And then when you get to verse 13, I think that's why you have these unbelievers that were like, "Yeah, those church people, they seem like, it seems like stuff's happening there.

    10:29-10:30

Why don't you go there?" I don't know.

    10:30-10:32

It's because I hear people drop over dead at that church.

    10:34-10:37

    Call me a little self-centered.

    10:37-10:43

Maybe I'm too much into the seeker mentality, but I'm looking to attend a church where I don't drop over dead.

    10:45-10:46

    I'm funny that way.

    10:47-10:49

I just want to raise my kids in a different kind of environment.

    10:49-10:50

    You know what I'm saying?

    10:51-10:52

    I think that's exactly what's going on.

    10:53-10:54

It says they didn't dare join them.

    10:56-11:09

Because when people are so committed to holding on to their sin, and lying about their sin, and covering up their sin, and they're finding that this is how serious God is about sin, you know what, I'll just admire that church from a distance.

    11:11-11:21

But here's something that this church had in Acts chapter 5, Honestly, I believe that we've lost in the church today in 2016.

    11:23-11:24

The line was a lot clearer.

    11:26-11:29

Who belonged to Christ and who didn't.

    11:29-11:30

    True or false?

    11:31-11:34

Because you see, today churches are filled.

    11:35-11:54

This church, go to any church, any church you go to, it's going to be filled with some people who know and love the Lord, born again, And some people that it's a social club, they just like being around church people or, you know, they're getting warm fuzzies out of it or whatever the reason, but they're not truly saved.

    11:56-12:03

And you see in the early days of the church, it wasn't comfortable to go to church if you weren't saved because you knew they were serious about sin.

    12:03-12:06

They were serious about following Jesus Christ.

    12:07-12:09

And we've just made concession in our day.

    12:10-12:11

Like, "Oh, you're not that serious about Jesus.

    12:11-12:54

You're not that serious about your sin." okay you can still come that's okay and we've sort of made it seem like it's not that big of a deal to us the line was so much clearer who belonged to God and who didn't and by no means am I saying well you know if you're not saved you shouldn't come here if you're not saved you have to be here but you shouldn't be sitting on the fence and you certainly shouldn't be playing the hypocrite but whatever the case if we don't address sin in the church we're And the idea that church should be comfortable and soft never crossed the apostles' minds.

    12:56-13:01

And obedience to God is just naturally going to repel some people.

    13:01-13:02

    It just is.

    13:04-13:07

I'm committed to expository preaching, verse-by-verse preaching.

    13:07-13:08

    What does the Bible say?

    13:09-13:11

And that's not everybody's cup of tea.

    13:11-13:19

I remember a few years ago, we were going through this series, we had this whole row of visitors in the back.

    13:19-13:25

You know, as a pastor, young church planter, like, "Woo-hoo, look at that, we just got like 10 new visitors." Our attendance just like doubled.

    13:25-13:27

You know, we had all these visitors sitting in the back.

    13:28-13:31

And I was like, "Okay, here's the sermon today.

    13:31-13:46

Today we're going to be talking about what the Bible says about hell." And I got up and I said, "Hell is a real place, and real people really go there." And as soon as I said that, that entire row stood up, single file, out the back.

    13:46-13:49

And I don't mean fire drill or using the restroom.

    13:49-13:50

    I mean gone.

    13:52-13:55

Because it's naturally going to repel some people.

    13:57-13:59

It's naturally going to repel some people.

    14:00-14:01

    That's okay.

    14:02-14:03

    Look at verse 14.

    14:05-14:18

It says, "And more than ever, believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women." At this point, the church was growing so much that numbers weren't even attached.

    14:19-14:20

    Before, we'd see numbers attached.

    14:21-14:23

Here's how big the church was. Here's how many people were added.

    14:24-14:25

At this point, they sort of stopped counting.

    14:26-14:27

Like, how many people were at that church?

    14:27-14:28

We don't know, but there was a lot.

    14:29-14:31

How many would you say? I would say multitudes.

    14:33-14:35

Well, do you have a number? Yes, I do have a number. One.

    14:35-14:38

One multitude of people were going to that church.

    14:38-14:40

    It was growing and growing.

    14:42-14:43

Crazy stuff. Look at verse 15.

    14:44-14:59

It says, "So that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them." What in the world is that verse about?

    15:00-15:05

The verse doesn't say that Peter's shadow was healing people.

    15:05-15:11

All this verse simply says is that people believed that Peter's shadow was healing people.

    15:12-15:16

And this verse is speaking about the reputation of the church.

    15:17-15:33

It's like God is so active in what these people are doing, and God is obviously doing so much through these people's ministry that, you know, Joe Average on the street was like, man, you know, my grandma's sick.

    15:33-15:41

If I can like drag her bed out, even if Peter walks by and his shadow touches grandma, grandma might get feeling better.

    15:41-15:47

That was just a reputation of a church where God is at work.

    15:48-16:06

Verse 16 says, "The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed." Word gets out when God is at work, and people are coming in even from the suburbs.

    16:07-16:13

What we see in this passage, we will be obedient, and we will trust God with the results.

    16:15-16:21

Even in this passage here, as I was studying this this week, I'm like, "Wow, what does this passage say about results?" It says, "Results were a mixed bag.

    16:22-16:24

Some people were kept away, verse 13.

    16:25-16:27

Many more were added, verse 14.

    16:28-16:30

But the disciples modeled this truth for us.

    16:30-16:31

You've heard me say it before.

    16:32-16:35

But doing God's thing God's way gets God's results.

    16:37-16:41

The results that we are going for at Harvest Bible Chapel is not quantity.

    16:42-16:44

    We can attract a crowd.

    16:45-16:46

    I mean, that's no problem.

    16:46-17:29

We can advertise that I'm gonna wrestle a polar bear sunday in the parking lot will get a crowd will be our last service that i'm pastor harvest bible chapel but will get a crowd but we're not just trying to get a crowd of people were not about a quantity were about quality we want to make true disciples as well as our uh... the way that we teach the bible the way that we have small groups and accountability i understand that's going to keep some people away from our church but i also understand that A ministry like this is going to draw people who really want to get serious about what the Bible says about your walk with Jesus Christ.

    17:30-17:32

And church, I'm committed to your discipleship.

    17:34-17:38

I'm committed to the people that are in this room, not the people that aren't here.

    17:39-17:40

    And yes, bring more people.

    17:40-17:41

    We'll love more people.

    17:41-17:42

    We'll minister to more.

    17:42-17:49

But you see, throughout the week, I'm not thinking about and praying over and people that aren't here.

    17:50-17:53

I'm thinking about you. I'm committed to you.

    17:55-17:58

My concern is for who is here, not how many people aren't here.

    17:59-18:06

So the early church, obedience to the mission, meant that they were going to trust God for the results.

    18:07-18:09

Unwilling to back down from that.

    18:10-18:11

    Secondly, jot this down.

    18:11-18:14

Number two, I will be obedient even when it seems crazy.

    18:16-18:17

    even when it seems crazy.

    18:17-18:18

    Look at verse 17.

    18:20-18:25

It says, "But the high priest rose up," we've already dealt with him, haven't we?

    18:25-18:35

It says, "But the high priest rose up "and all who were with him," that is the party of the Sadducees, "and filled with jealousy." Stop there for a second.

    18:37-18:40

Persecution is coming and church persecution is going to happen to us.

    18:40-18:47

Second Timothy 3.12 says, "All who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus, will be persecuted.

    18:49-18:50

    But what was their issue?

    18:51-18:52

What was their issue with the disciples?

    18:52-18:54

Did you see at the end of verse 17?

    18:54-18:57

The issue wasn't that they were filled with the Holy Spirit.

    18:57-18:58

They were filled with something else.

    18:59-18:59

    They were filled with jealousy.

    19:01-19:08

All of a sudden, the religious people that used to come and listen to them speak, now all of a sudden, these people had a crowd.

    19:09-19:12

People were flocking to see what was happening with these people.

    19:12-19:13

    They were just jealous.

    19:13-19:17

Why are these guys getting a bigger crowd than we are now?

    19:18-19:24

Purely out of jealousy So what did they do about it they had a prayer service, right?

    19:25-19:58

Now verse 18. It says they arrested the Apostles and put them in the public prison That was their answer verse 19 says but during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out Stop there for a second. You can't miss the humor because the Sadducees were a religious group that didn't believe angels existed. So don't you think it's kind of ironic that God would send an angel to let these guys out of prison?

    19:59-20:15

I believe God has a sense of humor. The angel opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, "Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life, talking about eternal life in Jesus Christ.

    20:16-20:21

When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.

    20:23-20:24

You see how crazy that is?

    20:25-20:26

Could you put yourself in that scenario?

    20:26-20:28

They were out preaching and teaching.

    20:28-20:29

    They get arrested.

    20:30-20:31

    They're thrown in jail.

    20:31-20:51

An angel shows up, opens the door, and they step out of the jail, and they're like, "We're free!" And now what? And the angel's like, "Go preach." "Um, I'm sorry, you must have not been paying attention, but that's what got us into jail in the first place.

    20:51-20:56

And now you want us to go back and do the very thing that just got us arrested?

    20:57-20:58

    I mean, isn't that crazy?

    20:58-21:10

It would be like if you stole a car, and you went to jail, and as soon as you got out of jail, went down to the police barracks and stole a police car.

    21:11-21:12

    Like, what are you thinking?

    21:12-21:14

You just got arrested for that.

    21:14-21:16

And that's what happened with the disciples here.

    21:17-21:21

Let out of jail, go right back to doing what you just got in trouble for.

    21:23-21:28

Interestingly, the Bible doesn't tell us that the disciples ran away or explained it away.

    21:28-21:29

    That's what we do.

    21:29-21:36

Like, I must not be hearing God correctly and persecution didn't change the mission.

    21:38-21:44

Persecution didn't change the mission because they went right back to it.

    21:45-21:55

In church, simple obedience is often crazy when you really stop and think about it.

    21:56-22:03

For example, baptism. Isn't baptism crazy? I mean, think about it.

    22:04-22:09

You're looking at me funny now. You're like, "Why is baptism crazy?" It's not crazy to you because you're used to it.

    22:10-22:12

You know, when somebody gives their life to Christ, they're baptized.

    22:12-22:17

But I want you to think about baptism from the perspective of somebody that has no idea what it is.

    22:18-22:21

And they're on the outside looking in, and what do you do at your church?

    22:21-22:30

Oh, well, when somebody believes in the leader of our church, Jesus Christ, we grab them and shove them underwater.

    22:32-22:33

    What? You do what?

    22:35-22:37

Yeah, that's what we do. We dunk people. In water.

    22:39-22:41

Well, that's really weird. Like, what, at a swimming pool at your house?

    22:41-22:43

Oh, no, sometimes we do it in public.

    22:44-22:48

Sometimes we just put a hot tub in the front of like hundreds of people and we just grab them and shove them underwater.

    22:49-22:51

Does that seem crazy to anybody else?

    22:52-22:54

    Obedience often looks crazy.

    22:55-22:56

    Think about giving.

    22:57-23:43

You know, we're talking about, you know, let's Let's give some of the money that we have worked and earned and we're going to send it completely on the other side of the planet to help people that speak a completely different language and Some of you probably will never meet these people It's crazy It's crazy Think of these mission trips. We sent a group to Romania. We went to Thailand last November and we'll spend thousands of dollars Some people actually take vacation days from work so that they can travel the other side of the planet to tell people a message about Jesus Christ.

    23:44-23:46

    Simple obedience is often crazy.

    23:47-24:04

I think when I was in Chicago at Big Harvest, we were having a baptism service, and this Muslim girl came forward and received Christ by faith to make that profession through baptism, and she told me that if her family finds out, they'll kill her.

    24:06-24:12

And I said, "Oh, you mean like they'll be really upset?" She said, "No." She was visibly shaking.

    24:12-24:14

She said, "No, I don't mean they'll be upset with me.

    24:15-24:21

I mean they will literally kill me." Simple obedience is often crazy.

    24:23-24:59

Don't you see, like the disciples, long before Tom Petty was singing it, were singing I won't back down I will be obedient even when it seems crazy finally for today I will be obedient even in the face of hostility let's pick up in verse 21 it says now when the high priest came and those who were with him they called together the council and all the Senate of the people of Israel and and sent to the prison to have them brought.

    24:59-25:02

Okay, so they think these guys are still in jail.

    25:02-25:10

They're like, "Go get them. Now." Okay, so here they go off to the prison to bring them back.

    25:11-25:18

Verse 22 says, "But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison." So they returned and reported.

    25:21-25:25

Um, how do I explain this without sounding like a complete maniac?

    25:25-25:37

Look at verse 23. This was their report. I mean, I just, I don't know, this just completely cracked me up. Go get the prisoners and they come back empty-handed and here's the report.

    25:38-26:17

We found the prison securely locked. Good! That's great, because prisons should be securely locked because there are criminals inside. Good! Okay. Wait, I'm not done yet. I'm not And the guards standing at the doors. Good! That's what we pay them for. They stand at the doors and make sure that the criminals don't get out. I'm not done yet. But when we open them, we found no one inside. Okay, that's a problem.

    26:18-26:54

Because that is pretty much undermining the whole purpose for which we have the prison structure! It doesn't matter that the doors are locked and that the guards are there. What matters is that the prisons are inside. How in the world did this happen?" And you can tell by the report, they're like, "Yeah, I can't even begin to fathom a guess." It says, "When the captain of the temple and the chief priest heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them." Yeah. Okay, Like, back up. I want you to tell me that story again.

    26:57-26:59

Wondering what this would come to.

    27:00-27:05

And someone came and told them, "Look!" This just gets worse and worse for these guys.

    27:06-27:11

"Look, the men whom you put in prison..." Oh, good, you found them. Good. Good.

    27:12-27:13

You had the wrong cell, right?

    27:15-27:24

"...are standing in the temple and teaching the people." This had to have been an absolute nightmare for the Sanhedrin.

    27:26-27:33

Okay, so not only are they not locked up, they are out doing the very thing that we arrested them for.

    27:35-27:38

Don't miss the fact that they're doing it in the temple.

    27:38-27:40

They're basically doing it right under their noses.

    27:41-27:49

It's not like, you know, we went to like some little secret corner of Jerusalem where there were a couple people in the dark, in the shadows, And that's where we did our preaching.

    27:50-27:51

They're like right in the temple!

    27:52-28:03

Like, "Jesus is alive! And he is awesome! And he can save you!" And they're like, "They're doing what?" Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

    28:04-28:18

It says, "Then the captain with the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people." You can totally see this picture, right?

    28:19-28:30

You're a parent, and you've ever been in public with your child, and you know that your child deserves a spanking right then and there, but you can't spank your child right then and there because you're in public.

    28:31-28:32

    Anybody else?

    28:33-28:34

    Oh, come on.

    28:35-28:38

You ever happen to Ananias and Sapphira when they lied in church?

    28:39-28:49

Parents, have you ever been in public, and you're like, "My kid needs a spanking, but I can't give them a spanking right now because I'm in public. Anybody else? Okay, thank you. So what do we do?

    28:50-30:13

Come on Let's use our manners and you like You need a spank, but I can't do it and that's kind of what's happening here. They're like Come on you people we're going to go have a talk They were so scared of What everybody how everybody else was going to react these apostles became so popular that these religious leaders literally thought if we're rough with these guys the crowds going to Riot and start throwing stones at us They're going to execute us. So Let's coddle them Not by force. They were afraid of being stoned by the people When they had brought them they set them before the council and the high priest questioned him saying we strictly charged you Not to teach in this name That was just like one chapter ago chapter 4 verse 17 here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and You intend to bring this man's blood upon us That is such an interesting phrase you intend to bring this man's blood upon us because if you remember Back in Matthew chapter 27 verse 25 the cry of the people when Jesus was being arrested Do you remember when Jesus was on trial?

    30:13-31:10

You remember the cry the people let his blood be on us and on our children. That's what they were screaming fast forward here a couple of months and Some of these same people like whoa, whoa, wait a second you're trying to you're trying to make us guilty of this man's blood So here comes the gospel verse 29 the Peter and the Apostles answered We must obey God rather than men The God of our fathers raised Jesus whom you killed by hanging him on a tree God exalted him at his right hand as leader and Savior to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins and we are witnesses to these things and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him." Peter just launches right into the Gospel.

    31:10-31:12

It just gets better every time I hear it.

    31:12-31:19

But notice, it's much more intense this time than the last time he preached to these same people.

    31:20-31:21

But all the elements are there.

    31:22-31:25

He talks about the death of Jesus Christ.

    31:25-31:30

Jesus died to pay the penalty for your sin and for my sin.

    31:30-31:32

He took our sin upon Himself.

    31:32-31:34

He talks about the resurrection of Jesus.

    31:35-31:37

Jesus rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    31:38-31:40

He talks about the exaltation of Jesus.

    31:41-31:51

Jesus is now seated at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us in prayer, waiting for the day that He's going to come and return and reclaim the earth.

    31:52-31:53

    He talks about repentance.

    31:55-32:02

God's calling for a complete life change, a radical transformation that comes when you truly come to faith in Jesus Christ.

    32:03-32:04

    How does that happen?

    32:04-32:07

He talks about the Holy Spirit given to those who respond.

    32:08-32:09

    Notice it's for everybody.

    32:09-32:18

It's not like there's a few really special spiritual people who get the Holy Spirit, and the rest of us, like average knuckleheads, are just like regular strength Christians.

    32:19-32:24

Everyone who believes in Jesus Christ, born again, has the gift of the Holy Spirit.

    32:26-32:28

Peter lays out the gospel for them again.

    32:29-32:41

Last week I read an article where Saturday Night Live, the television program, did a skit based on the movie called "God's Not Dead 2," and I didn't see the skit.

    32:42-32:53

But this article intrigued me because Pat Boone, a musician, actor, speaker, has a decades-long career.

    32:53-33:00

He was talking about the skit being highly offensive, which I could imagine that it was.

    33:02-33:03

But here's the thing that intrigued me about the article.

    33:04-33:16

It said that Pat Boone said, "Believers in God deserve an apology." That's what he said. He goes, "Believers in God deserve an apology." I thought about that.

    33:18-33:20

Do you really think that Christians deserve an apology?

    33:21-33:22

    Where is that written?

    33:23-33:45

Do you really think that people that hate God and hate God's people to the point of public ridicule, to the point of producing this program that we're going to air on television so millions of people can watch us make fun of Jesus, do you really think those people are going to offer up a heartfelt apology?

    33:47-33:52

I understand Pat Boone's sentiment, I would just say don't hold your breath.

    33:52-33:53

    I don't think that apology's coming.

    33:54-33:58

And honestly, as Christians, I don't think we should expect it from the world.

    34:00-34:01

Dead people act like dead people.

    34:01-34:03

Lost people act like lost people.

    34:03-34:06

In church, it's going to get worse, not better.

    34:07-34:12

So our responsibility to a hostile world is obedience to God.

    34:12-34:14

    It's that I won't back down.

    34:15-34:17

I'm not going to dilute the message.

    34:18-34:19

I'm not going to demand that they apologize.

    34:20-34:24

I'm going to shine as light in a dark world.

    34:25-34:27

Yeah, it's going to get hostile.

    34:28-34:29

And that's just going to give me greater opportunity.

    34:31-34:32

    As long as I refuse.

    34:34-34:38

By God's grace and by His power, I refuse to back down.

    34:40-34:42

So do you want God's results in ministry?

    34:43-34:44

    Be obedient.

    34:46-34:50

Do you feel that God's calling you to do something that seems absolutely crazy?

    34:52-34:54

Like these early apostles, be obedient.

    34:56-34:58

Do you find yourself staring down hostility?

    34:59-35:00

    Be obedient.

    35:01-35:02

    Make this your motto.

    35:04-35:10

"I must obey God rather than man." And make this your song.

    35:11-35:14

    So I won't back down.

    35:15-35:16

    Will you pray with me?

    35:18-35:31

Father in heaven, we thank you for the example that you have shown us by Spirit-powered people in an absolutely crazy passage in your Word.

    35:32-35:34

    So many things happening.

    35:36-35:50

And the overarching theme that we see, Father, the persistence that you give us by the power of your Holy Spirit, the desire to serve you and honor you, the appetite to do what is pleasing to you.

    35:52-35:59

Father, we know it's never been easy, but we know it's getting increasingly harder to live in this lost and dying world.

    36:01-36:03

It's just easier to water it down.

    36:04-36:09

It's just easier to not be so radical about our enthusiasm for Jesus Christ.

    36:10-36:12

And I pray, Father, we would take this passage to heart.

    36:15-36:25

We saw your people do some amazing things because you were the one, by your power, doing it through them.

    36:27-36:35

But they've certainly set an example for us and presenting themselves available to you as your servants.

    36:37-36:50

Father, I pray that for Harvest Bible Chapel, that we don't dilute the message, we're not afraid of hostility, we don't shrink back when we believe that your calling is to do something that the rest of the world might say is crazy.

    36:52-37:00

But our trust in you is so strong, our faith in you is so deep, that we will be obedient no matter the cost.

    37:01-37:06

All to your glory and honor, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 5:12-32

  1.  In Acts 5:1-11, God dealt with sin. What effect did this have on non-believers (Acts 5:13)? What does this say about the mentality of a church that is “just going after numbers”, that is, just wants to bring in as many people as possible?

  2. Compare Peter’s sermon in Acts 5:29-32 with his sermon (to the same audience) in Acts 4:8-12. What is the difference? What does this say about how you should witness?

  3. Share something crazy God called you to do. How did you know that was what He wanted? Why did you think it was crazy at the time? How did obedience work out for you?

Power and Witness - Power of Discipline
Jeff Miller
  • 00:00-00:04

Open up your Bibles with me please to the book of Acts.

    00:06-00:07

    In chapter 5.

    00:09-00:16

Today in this passage we're going to see an extremely memorable day at church.

    00:17-00:18

And I was thinking about this.

    00:20-00:26

I have been a part of some very memorable church services where some crazy things have happened.

    00:28-00:38

My former church, I used to go to different places to preach, whether it was the jail in which we're still involved or different senior citizen housing.

    00:38-00:43

One in particular was this home called Classy Country.

    00:43-00:45

    It was out towards Shakora.

    00:46-00:49

And I think that they set me up to fail.

    00:50-01:54

They asked me to come to Classy Country speak on a Friday at one o'clock and they put me in this room there's this community room where all the residents would come in and there would sit in these very big fluffy comfortable couches and chairs and there was a TV and they would ask me to come and literally they put a podium right in front of the TV and they want me to preach to these people and I get up and start to speak and I could see everybody like... So I went to the people that ran, the nurses, the staff, said, "Can we turn the TV off? It's a little distracting." You know, I imagine you would be distracted if I'm trying to preach now, and Family Feud was on the screen. Well, the other problem, and having a service in such a facility at 1 o'clock is they had just got done eating lunch.

    01:55-01:58

This isn't an age thing because it's the same thing for me too.

    02:00-02:04

But when I'm done eating lunch, I get a little drowsy.

    02:06-02:06

    Anybody else?

    02:08-02:17

And if I get done eating lunch and you put me on a big fluffy couch and turn the TV on, guess what I'm going to probably do?

    02:18-02:21

I remember the one day I was doing...

    02:22-02:24

This is what you call humility in ministry.

    02:26-02:31

I was doing the service, and I'm up there, and I had this great message.

    02:31-02:32

I'm sure it was a great message.

    02:32-02:39

And I'm preaching, and I'm preaching, and I'm about 5-10 minutes into the message, and I look up, and suddenly it hit me.

    02:41-02:45

Every single person in the room was asleep.

    02:47-02:49

about 20 residents there without exception.

    02:50-02:53

And I don't mean like catching themselves.

    02:53-02:57

I mean heads back, mouth open, snoring.

    02:58-03:00

Literally every single resident in the place.

    03:01-03:06

So I-- at the time, no joke, I said, well, that's-- we're just going to close there.

    03:06-03:09

And I remember, see you next time.

    03:09-03:13

And just kind of closed my Bible very quietly and walked away.

    03:14-03:23

So being an entrepreneur, I just started charging them for my services of putting residents to sleep.

    03:25-03:31

One time, no joke, same place, just got there, just ready to start speaking, when one of the nurses came.

    03:32-03:33

And she's like, hey, I need to talk to you.

    03:33-03:35

And I'm like, church is about to start.

    03:35-03:36

    She's like, it's really important.

    03:38-03:40

    OK, what is it?

    03:40-04:00

She goes, "I don't want to alarm you, but there's a scabies outbreak here." She says, "All the residents have it and all the staff." I'm like, "And this could not have been communicated in a phone call." To this day, that was the shortest sermon that I've ever preached.

    04:02-04:05

I just got up and I'm like, "Jesus loves you, and amen.

    04:06-04:07

    Read your Bibles and pray.

    04:07-04:09

I'll see you next month." I was out of there.

    04:10-04:22

And I went home and I took a scalding shower and Aaron said, "That's not going to help if you've got scabies." And I said, "But it's making me feel better." I could go on and on.

    04:22-04:27

There were some very memorable services that I had been a part of.

    04:29-04:32

Nothing compared to what we see in Acts 5.

    04:33-04:44

Remember last week when we were in Acts 4, closed with this commentary on the life of the church, I saw the early church had this unity because it was so unselfish.

    04:45-04:52

And chapter 4 closes with the example of Barnabas who was encouraging and who was giving.

    04:52-04:54

And then we get to Acts 5.

    04:54-04:56

What's the first word of your Bible?

    04:56-04:56

    What's it say?

    04:57-05:02

Acts 5.1 says, "But..." Does your Bible say "but"?

    05:02-05:04

That means there's a contrast here.

    05:04-05:18

It's like Barnabas, he was so encouraging and he was so giving So we're going to see a sharp contrast here that not everybody in the church was a Barnabas.

    05:19-05:24

So let's look at the text, then we're going to go back and pick up some principles.

    05:24-05:36

Sometimes we walk through the text together, but I want to read the whole thing today first, because I want to get the flow of the story before we make some applications.

    05:36-05:42

It says, "But a man named Ananias, who was a man of great wisdom, with his wife, Sapphira, sold a piece of property.

    05:44-05:54

And with his wife's knowledge, he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet." Very important.

    05:55-05:57

    We saw Acts 4.35.

    05:59-06:01

That's what the early church was doing.

    06:01-06:10

In order to meet needs, they would sell houses or lands or whatever they could sell, and they would bring the money and they would give it to the leaders of the church.

    06:10-06:28

And that's what's happening here with the exception, this man again, verse 2, "with his wife's knowledge sold a piece of property but only brought some of the proceeds." It says he kept some for himself.

    06:30-06:40

"Peter said, 'Ananias, why has Satan You have spilled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land.

    06:43-06:45

While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own?

    06:46-06:49

And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal?

    06:51-06:54

Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart?

    06:54-06:56

You have not lied to men, but to God.

    06:58-07:03

When Ananias heard these words, fell down and breathed his last.

    07:05-07:08

And great fear came upon all who heard of it.

    07:10-07:17

The young men rose, wrapped him up, carried him out, buried him.

    07:19-07:27

Verse 7 says, "After an interval of about three hours, his wife came in not knowing what had happened." Okay, so here comes the fire.

    07:27-07:28

    Hey guys, what's up?

    07:29-07:30

What's going on? What's going on?

    07:32-07:50

"And Peter said to her, 'Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?' And she said, 'Yes, for so much.' Peter said to her, 'How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord?

    07:50-08:01

Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door and they will carry you out.' and immediately she fell down at His feet and breathed her last.

    08:02-08:09

When the young men came in, they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

    08:11-08:20

And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard these things." That was a wild day at church.

    08:21-08:25

And on your outline, very simply, you have one of these outlines.

    08:25-08:26

    Let's break some things down.

    08:29-08:30

    Hypocrisy.

    08:32-08:34

    Just don't do it.

    08:36-08:37

    Let's break the text down.

    08:38-08:39

    Number one, jot this down.

    08:39-08:41

Number one, hypocrisy is a serious sin.

    08:45-08:46

    Hypocrisy is a serious sin.

    08:46-08:48

Again, this is what's happening in the passage.

    08:48-08:50

"Yan and Isaac set fire to this husband and wife.

    08:50-08:58

They conspired together." Okay, we're going to sell this property, We're only going to bring some of the money.

    08:59-09:01

Everybody was selling and bringing all the money.

    09:02-09:03

    They're like, you know what?

    09:04-09:05

    We'll sell it.

    09:06-09:08

We'll pocket some of the money.

    09:08-09:09

    We'll bring the rest.

    09:11-09:12

Nobody's going to know any different.

    09:13-09:14

    But understand this, church.

    09:14-09:16

I don't want you to misunderstand what's happening.

    09:16-09:21

The issue was not that they kept some of the money for themselves.

    09:22-09:23

    That was not the issue.

    09:25-09:28

New Testament giving, as we said before, New Testament giving is voluntary.

    09:30-09:32

    This was the early church.

    09:32-09:33

    This wasn't the mob.

    09:34-09:36

    This was voluntary giving.

    09:36-09:37

    That wasn't the problem.

    09:38-09:41

The problem is obvious from the text.

    09:41-09:44

The problem is they were lying about it.

    09:44-09:53

They were making people think that they were giving it all, that they were actually keeping some for themselves.

    09:53-09:55

    The issue was hypocrisy.

    09:56-09:57

    What is hypocrisy?

    09:58-10:00

Hypocrisy is just very simply this.

    10:00-10:02

It's pretending to be something that you aren't.

    10:04-10:06

It's pretending to be something that you aren't.

    10:06-10:08

And it's obvious from the flow of the text.

    10:08-10:09

    This is the issue.

    10:09-10:37

Barnabas sold, gave, and everybody's like, "Barnabas is great!" Ananias and Sapphira are like, "Hmm, you know, I would like people to think that I am great." "Sweetheart, wouldn't you like people to think that you are great?" "We have something we can sell, but we could also use some money." So they decided to put on a show.

    10:38-10:40

    Their lying was the issue.

    10:42-10:45

And Jesus actually warned about hypocrisy and giving.

    10:45-10:47

    Matthew 6, verse 2.

    10:47-10:58

Jesus said, "When you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others.

    10:59-11:11

Truly I say to you, they have received their reward." Jesus said some people when they give, it's not because they care about the needy, it's because they care about their reputation.

    11:12-11:15

And they metaphorically are sounding a trumpet before them.

    11:15-11:21

You know, "Brrp, brrp, brrp, brrp, brrp, brrp, brrp, I'm about to give!" Everybody have your applause ready.

    11:23-11:27

Is this about giving because you care about people?

    11:28-11:32

Or is this about giving because you want people to care about you?

    11:34-12:08

Jesus said when you do that, you're being a hypocrite because everybody thinks it's about the giving when it's about yourself. So why would Ananias and Sapphira do this conspiracy? Obviously they wanted the kudos, they wanted the acclaim, they wanted the recognition, they wanted the church to think they brought it all when they didn't. We'll get credit and we'll get profit at the same time. The issue here, church, is the deceit. The issue The issue wasn't that they kept some of the money.

    12:10-12:26

And hear this, the issue wasn't even that a sin occurred in the church, because sin is going to happen in the church, but there is a difference between confessing a sin and being a hypocrite.

    12:26-12:36

There's a difference between, "Look, I sinned. I did something wrong," versus I did something wrong and I'm going to lie about it.

    12:38-12:42

And the difference is heart attitude, and it boils down to two words.

    12:43-12:45

You're either repentant or you're unrepentant.

    12:47-12:47

    That's it.

    12:49-12:51

You're going to sin. You're going to sin.

    12:52-12:55

Why? Because you still live in this fallen flesh.

    12:55-12:57

You and I are going to sin.

    12:57-13:10

The issue is, are you willing to confess and repent and deal with it, or are you going to lie about it and be a hypocrite?

    13:12-13:56

Because you see, we can, as a church, as leaders, elders, we can address and minister to you through any sin. Whether you're dealing with lust or pride or anger or whatever sin, we can deal with any sin. But the one sin that we can't work with you on is the sin of hypocrisy. Because if you're unwilling to own up to your own sin, there's really not much the church can do to address it. So what do we do at Harvest Bible Chapel? Understand that we have tried and we have worked so hard to to create a culture where we can safely deal with sin.

    13:56-14:04

We've tried to create a culture where you have opportunity to come clean and to deal with sin.

    14:05-14:09

If you're part of a small group, that's what breakout time - where men and women separate.

    14:09-14:14

That way we can confess sins to one another and pray for one another as the Bible instructs us to do.

    14:15-14:16

    It's a safe place.

    14:17-14:18

    We have vaguest rules.

    14:18-14:21

We're talking about in breakout time, stays in breakout time.

    14:21-14:22

    And we confess our sins.

    14:22-14:24

Hey guys, I need you to pray for me.

    14:24-14:26

I need help because I'm struggling with this.

    14:27-14:29

And we are very honest with each other.

    14:31-14:32

The point is we're dealing with it.

    14:34-14:47

Also, up front, after every service, we have elders and people from our prayer team that will be glad to pray with you and deal with whatever it is you need dealt with.

    14:48-14:49

    There are opportunities here.

    14:51-14:54

Do you have any areas of hypocrisy in your life right now?

    14:54-15:00

Right now, do you have a secret sin that you are refusing to deal with?

    15:02-15:03

Instead, you've been covering it up.

    15:05-15:12

Because according to this passage, and we're going to see as we march through here a little more, that pretending only makes it worse.

    15:12-15:13

    Sin - bad.

    15:15-15:33

Trying to cover it up, Hypocrisy always gets found out.

    15:33-15:39

Again, verse 3 and 4, "Peter immediately, Ananias, why has Satan killed your hearts in light of the Holy Spirit?

    15:41-15:47

And keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land." How did Peter know that?

    15:47-16:06

that. It had to have been spiritually discerned. That's the only thing I can think of. I don't think he looked him up on Google or you know he didn't get on their Facebook page. Ann and I's had this Facebook page like about their you know about the line of the church BRB LOL. It wasn't that.

    16:09-17:11

Somehow the Holy Spirit revealed that to him. Spiritual discernment that Peter knew. With everybody else doing it, Heater knew that this couple was up to something and he knew very specifically what it was. But I want you to notice in verse 4, Heater says, "Why did you do it? I know what you did." But verse 4, Heater says, "Why did you even do it? Because it is completely unnecessary." That's why the question is, he says, "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own and after it was sold was it not at your disposal?" He says, "It was yours as land, it was yours as money, it was yours to do with whatever you wanted to do with, so why did you lie about it? It doesn't make any sense." He says, "Why is it that you've contrived this deed in your heart?" He said, "And here it is, you've not lied to men but to God. You thought you were walking in lying to people, you're lying to God.

    17:14-17:15

And He's taking it very seriously.

    17:18-17:23

At Harvest Bible Chapel, you've heard me preach this before, but we are simply trying to be authentic.

    17:24-17:30

We can't be perfect because our sin prevents that, but we can be authentic.

    17:31-17:32

    Nothing prevents that.

    17:35-17:36

So why do we hide sin?

    17:38-17:39

    Why would we hide it?

    17:40-17:42

Well, it's pretty obvious some of the reasons.

    17:42-17:47

    Shame, embarrassment, fear of consequences.

    17:47-17:48

    What would people do?

    17:49-17:51

What would people say if they found out what's really going on in my heart?

    17:52-17:53

Fear of what people will think.

    17:55-17:59

As the leadership of the church, as the small group, are they going to think less of me?

    18:01-18:03

If they know that I'm struggling with this sin.

    18:06-18:09

Sometimes people want to hide their sin because they think they're the only one dealing with it.

    18:10-18:21

I've got this problem happening in my life with lust or with envy or whatever it is and I can't really confess that because I'm probably the only person here that's really dealing with it.

    18:23-18:33

Or in this passage, another reason that people hide sin is because they want other people to think that you're something that you're not.

    18:35-18:37

I want people to think that I'm something that I'm not.

    18:40-18:42

Hypocrisy is an affront to God.

    18:45-18:48

Right now, if you're hiding something, I may not know about it.

    18:49-18:51

The elders may not know about it.

    18:52-18:54

Your small group may not know about it.

    18:55-18:57

Guys, your wife might not even know what you're hiding.

    18:57-19:02

But I guarantee you, there is someone who knows what you're hiding, and it's God Himself.

    19:03-19:12

God had said in Numbers 32, 23, "Be sure your sin will find you out." It's going to happen.

    19:14-19:16

You may get away with it for a week.

    19:16-19:18

You may get away with it for a month.

    19:19-19:21

You may get away with it for a year.

    19:21-19:27

But God's going to make sure eventually this thing that you're trying to hide is going to get found out.

    19:29-19:30

You're like, "Well, how does that happen?

    19:31-19:38

this week, do I have an example where somebody was hiding a sin and it was revealed?

    19:41-19:43

I had to stop thinking of examples.

    19:43-19:45

    I have dozens of them.

    19:47-19:48

    Crazy things.

    19:48-20:00

I have multiple stories of people who meant to send a message or an email or a text to somebody else, And it ended up going to the pastor.

    20:01-20:02

    That's happened to me.

    20:04-20:09

I go, "We need to talk." I had a lady one time, I ran into her at the hospital.

    20:10-20:12

She laughs about it now, it wasn't funny at the time.

    20:13-20:14

I ran into her at the hospital.

    20:14-20:17

I was up visiting somebody, and she was up visiting somebody else.

    20:18-20:19

I just ran into her in the hospital.

    20:21-20:25

And she's like, "Hey Pastor Jeff, it's good to see you.

    20:25-20:30

I'm just really struggling with this drug addiction right now." As soon as she said that, she turned white as a ghost.

    20:31-20:36

She said, "Why did I just say that?" And I said, "You tell me.

    20:38-20:54

Maybe the Lord was wanting you to reveal this thing that you've kept hidden for years." One of the craziest stories, we had a guy whose marriage was on the rocks The elders had met with the man's wife.

    20:55-20:57

    This was at another church.

    20:57-20:58

The elders had met with the man's wife.

    20:58-21:02

And then the man, the husband, came to the elders in tears.

    21:02-21:10

"I just want to save my marriage." The elders said, "Well, there are talks that there's an affair going on.

    21:10-21:11

    Do you have a girlfriend?

    21:11-21:15

Do you have somebody else?" "Oh, no, no, no. Absolutely not.

    21:15-21:33

Absolutely not. I don't." Right after that meeting, shortly after, several days after that meeting, wouldn't you know it, a teenage girl in our church was at a restaurant, just happened to be the same place this man and his girlfriend were.

    21:35-21:38

What's your point? The point is you're going to get found out.

    21:38-21:53

You're going to get found out. So this thing you think you're hiding, you're not hiding it from God. Do you think, after we went through this Isaiah series, Do you think God lacks the power and sovereignty to reveal your sin?

    21:53-21:54

I just gave you several examples.

    21:55-21:58

I could keep you here for the rest of the afternoon and give you several more.

    21:58-22:00

He's going to let it be known.

    22:01-22:02

    Why?

    22:03-22:05

Because God doesn't deal in the hypocrite business.

    22:06-22:14

God says, "Yeah, let's be sincere, let's be authentic, but we've got to at least confess it and deal with it." Then the healing can happen.

    22:17-22:19

You're not going to get away with it.

    22:19-22:21

God will sovereignly make sure of that.

    22:21-22:25

If you have a secret sin in your life, it's not too late today.

    22:26-22:31

I would encourage you to come clean before God exposes you, because you will be found out.

    22:34-22:35

Thirdly, hypocrisy will be dealt with.

    22:37-22:38

    Hypocrisy will be dealt with.

    22:38-22:40

That's something we see in this story.

    22:40-22:43

That's probably the most graphic thing we see in this story.

    22:45-22:46

    Ananias and Sapphira lied.

    22:47-22:48

    Peter called them on it.

    22:50-22:52

    God executed the discipline.

    22:53-22:56

Interestingly, Peter even gave Sapphira a chance to repent.

    22:58-23:06

When she came in, Peter said, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?" And she said, "Yeah, for so much." Peter was giving her a chance.

    23:06-23:09

Like, look, your husband just lied about this.

    23:09-23:09

You're going to lie about it?

    23:10-23:11

    And she did.

    23:13-23:15

But hypocrisy will be dealt with.

    23:17-23:21

in Canaanites and Sapphira, God may choose to deal with it directly.

    23:22-23:29

And the ultimate form of discipline is death - even for sinning believers.

    23:31-23:32

You can jot these references down.

    23:34-23:35

    1 Corinthians 11.

    23:36-23:37

    Verse 30.

    23:38-23:40

    1 John 5.16.

    23:43-23:45

Sometimes God disciplines His people with death.

    23:46-23:49

I can tell you a story about that sometime.

    23:50-23:55

When God disciplines a believer with death, He doesn't take their salvation away.

    23:55-23:56

    They're still saved.

    23:57-23:59

He takes them out of the earth.

    24:01-24:04

    Their salvation isn't in question.

    24:05-24:19

However, God says I'm not going to allow you I'll take it back." So the question comes up, "What about Ananias and Sapphira?

    24:19-24:20

    Were they believers?

    24:21-24:27

Were these people believers?" And I studied that a lot this week and I absolutely believe that they were.

    24:28-24:30

Let me tell you why I believe that they were believers.

    24:32-24:35

The passage says that they lied to the Holy Spirit.

    24:37-24:40

And that's not a phrase that would apply to an unbeliever.

    24:40-24:41

An unbeliever doesn't lie to the Holy Spirit.

    24:41-24:44

doesn't have dealings with the Holy Spirits.

    24:45-24:47

And really, it's the point of the whole passage.

    24:47-24:51

This passage isn't about unbelievers can do wicked things.

    24:51-24:52

    Like yeah, everybody knows that.

    24:52-24:53

The world acts like the world.

    24:54-24:55

That's not the point of the passage.

    24:56-25:01

The point of the passage is God isn't keen on His people staining the church.

    25:03-25:10

In the flow of the text, we've been talking about the church, the congregation, the members of the church, and it just flows right into this.

    25:10-25:13

I don't see any designation that they weren't believers.

    25:16-25:17

    It seems that they were.

    25:19-25:21

So God can deal with hypocrisy.

    25:23-25:28

But also, God has called church leaders to deal with sin in the church.

    25:29-25:36

1 Peter 4:17 - I wonder if Peter was thinking about this instance when he wrote this.

    25:36-25:41

Peter said, "For it is time judgment to begin at the household of God.

    25:43-25:46

It's the most unpleasant part of the job in church leadership.

    25:46-25:50

I love preaching and teaching and picnics.

    25:51-25:52

    I love that stuff.

    25:53-25:54

    Baptisms all day long.

    25:56-26:01

The most unpleasant part of the job is dealing with sin in the church when people refuse to repent.

    26:02-26:06

But, elders, it's part of the job.

    26:07-26:11

We have a God-given responsibility deal with unrepentant sin.

    26:12-26:15

1 Corinthians 5, 11-13, do we have that verse?

    26:16-26:18

This is what the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth.

    26:19-26:27

Here you had a guy that was sleeping with his stepmother and bragging about it and the rest of the church was high-fiving him.

    26:28-26:39

And Paul's like, "You gotta get that guy out of there." But at the end of this passage Paul says, "But now I'm writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother, do you see that?

    26:39-26:41

    Bears the name of brother.

    26:41-26:45

You call yourself a Christian and you're an unrepentant sin?

    26:45-26:45

    Uh uh.

    26:46-26:48

That's not how we play here.

    26:49-27:03

If he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler, not to even eat with such a one.

    27:03-27:09

Somebody calls himself a Christian and they're living with unrepentance, Don't even go to McDonald's with them after church.

    27:09-27:10

    Okay, they're on their own.

    27:13-27:15

What have I to do with judging outsiders?

    27:16-27:20

Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge?

    27:21-27:22

    God judges those outside.

    27:22-27:25

Purge the evil person from among you.

    27:27-27:37

Our job is not to sort of legislate morality to the unsaved, like go to our unsaved friends and family and say you need to act like a Christian.

    27:37-27:38

They can't act like a Christian.

    27:38-27:39

    They don't have the resources.

    27:40-27:55

But it is certainly our job as church leaders in the church when somebody says they're a believer, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, believing in the Word of God, living in unrepentant sin, we have to deal with that.

    27:57-28:00

And I know it sounds so harsh in our day of tolerance.

    28:01-28:05

But this is how serious God is about purity in the church.

    28:07-28:10

If you sin and you're repentant, ok, we'll work through it.

    28:10-28:15

If you sin and you're unrepentant and you're trying to cover it up, you're a candidate for church discipline.

    28:17-28:55

And I don't have to sell you on the truth that if you confess and we deal with it, it's handled in a much different way than if your sin becomes exposed have to deal with it then? Like kids, right? Like kids. If your kid comes home and says, "Mom, I did something bad at school today." You're going to deal with it. Aren't you going to deal with it much differently if the teacher calls you and says, "Hey, guess what Evan did at school today?" Maybe not Evan. Insert name of with your child here.

    28:57-28:59

Aren't you going to deal with it differently?

    28:59-29:00

If the teacher has to tell you?

    29:03-29:04

    It's like, dude, fess up.

    29:05-29:06

Because I'm going to find out.

    29:07-29:10

And it's not going to be pretty if I have to find out from somebody else.

    29:11-29:12

So it goes in the church.

    29:13-29:17

I'd like to remind you that the goal of discipline is correction, not punishment.

    29:19-29:26

The reason that we don't associate with a Christian in unrepentant sin - and unrepentant sin.

    29:26-29:28

It's not that we're punishing them.

    29:29-29:36

We want them to get back on track, but the only way they're going to snap back to reality is if they realize, hey, sin is serious.

    29:37-29:38

    Okay? It's serious business.

    29:39-29:41

And you're not treating it like it's serious.

    29:42-29:44

So look, you're not welcome here.

    29:44-29:45

    We're not hanging out.

    29:46-29:48

    Until you deal with this.

    29:48-29:56

Until you have a repentant heart and you're willing to work with the church It's corrective, it's not punishment.

    29:58-30:02

Just like with kids, we want to get people back on track.

    30:04-30:06

So, hypocrisy will be dealt with.

    30:08-30:16

And finally for today, we must all be deadly serious about hypocrisy.

    30:17-30:19

    Deadly serious, pun intended.

    30:20-30:40

Verse 11, "As a result of all of this," read that verse again, "and great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things." I am not casting doubt on the way God put His Word together, but can we be honest?

    30:41-30:42

There are some verses that really don't need to be in the Bible.

    30:43-30:45

I seriously could have assumed this one, you know what I mean, Dan?

    30:45-30:46

I could have assumed this one.

    30:47-30:52

You know, two people walk into church and get carried out, and everybody else is like, "Oh my gosh!

    30:53-30:56

Did you hear what happened in church?" Yeah, I could have put those pieces together.

    30:56-31:02

But the Lord reminds us here, great fear came upon the whole church.

    31:03-31:03

    What do you mean fear?

    31:03-31:04

    It's reverence.

    31:05-31:05

    It's reverence.

    31:08-31:12

That's the reason that God had dealt so personally and swiftly with this sin.

    31:13-31:19

And that's the reason why, as church leaders, we need to deal swiftly and definitively with sin.

    31:19-31:25

One of the reasons, not just to correct the person that's sinning, but it's also to deter others.

    31:28-31:30

Paul told Timothy this in 1 Timothy 5:20.

    31:30-31:45

He says, "As for those who persist in sin, rebuke them in the presence of all so that the rest may stand in fear." is a big deal and we're not honoring God by minimizing it.

    31:47-32:01

So if someone won't repent of flagrant sin, we deal with it, hoping to correct him, but also, hoping that the next guy that's tempted has one more reason to not go through with it.

    32:02-32:04

The next guy that's tempted to say, you know what?

    32:05-32:07

I saw what happened to Ananias.

    32:09-32:16

How many people do you think were tempted to lie about their giving in this church for like the next foreseeable forever for them?

    32:17-32:19

Do you think that ever left their minds?

    32:19-32:23

Do you think they ever for a second considered lying about what they were giving to the church?

    32:25-32:26

    Absolutely not.

    32:27-32:28

Because they said, "I don't want that to be me.

    32:28-32:30

I saw the way God deals with this.

    32:30-32:32

I see how serious it is.

    32:33-32:43

I'm not going to do it." Again, if you're hiding something, it's not going to take you anywhere good.

    32:43-32:44

    God's going to expose it.

    32:45-32:53

It's going to be dealt with, and it's going to be much easier for you, if you take the initiative, to deal with it now.

    32:54-33:07

Proverbs 28, 13 says, "Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who Mercy.

    33:09-33:14

Maybe there's somebody here today that says, you know what, I'm done holding on to this secret thing.

    33:14-33:25

I've kept this thing secret for so long, and I know that I should come clean, and I've waited, and I just want to be done with this.

    33:25-33:28

I want this finally behind me.

    33:29-33:30

    This is a safe place.

    33:31-33:39

Come to a place where you will be loved, and where people will pray for you, and help you get back on track.

    33:39-33:44

Because our concern is your personal walk with the Lord.

    33:46-34:00

And yeah, during this time, it might be uncomfortable, but it's going to be a lot more uncomfortable if God has to be the one to expose it, and He or we have to deal with it then.

    34:01-34:04

Today can be a brand new day for somebody here.

    34:05-34:12

If there's anything at all that you're holding on to, there's literally no reason to hold off.

    34:14-34:15

    God's going to expose it.

    34:17-34:19

You should expose it before it has to come to you.

    34:21-34:23

Father in Heaven, I lift up my brothers and sisters here.

    34:25-34:29

This is a very serious passage because it shows us how serious you are about sin.

    34:31-34:34

    I pray, nothing secret here.

    34:35-34:53

We want this to be a place of transparency and freedom to confess and to deal with, whether it's a besetting sin, whether it's some secret thing that maybe our spouses don't even know about, something we've been holding onto for a long time.

    34:55-35:03

Let today be the day God, we don't want to be hypocrites.

    35:05-35:07

We don't want that to be the testimony.

    35:07-35:08

Certainly, we look at Your Word.

    35:08-35:11

We'd like to be known more as a Barnabas.

    35:12-35:15

Someone who's authentic and serves as an example.

    35:15-35:20

We wouldn't want to be known as somebody who was a phony.

    35:22-35:23

I thank You, Father, for Your grace.

    35:24-35:25

We want to extend that grace.

    35:26-35:27

    We want to reflect it.

    35:29-35:33

Father, I pray for a spirit of authenticity in this church.

    35:35-35:38

Let this be a new day for someone here today.

    35:39-35:41

Let this be the start of something new.

    35:44-35:46

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 5:1-11

  1. What was Ananias and Sapphira’s sin? What was the real issue? How do we know it’s not about the amount of money given? (hint: see Acts 5:4)

  2. Do you think Ananias and Sapphira were true believers in Jesus Christ? Why or why not? What difference does it make in understanding the passage?

  3. *What lesson does this passage teach about God’s attitude towards sin in the church

  4. How should church leaders (elders) address unrepentant sin in the church? See also 1 Corinthians 5:11-13 and 1 Peter 4:17.

  5. *Do God’s actions seem extreme in this passage to you, considering the nature of the offense? Why did God deal with this sin so personally, abruptly, and definitively?

Breakout Questions:

This passage is a reminder of how vital this breakout time is. Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another. Sin and hypocrisy are serious matters to God. Make them serious to you.

Power and Witness - Power in Unity
Jeff Miller
  • 00:00-00:04

Open up your Bibles with me, please, to the book of Acts and chapter 4.

    00:05-00:20

Acts 4, the title of today's message is "Power in Unity." While you're turning there, Aaron and I, our first experience as parents was actually with foster children.

    00:21-00:27

And we had five foster children over the years, but we had a brother and sister at one point.

    00:28-00:30

    little boy's name was Walter.

    00:32-00:39

And we had signed Walter up-- he was five years old-- we had signed Walter up for five-year-old soccer league.

    00:39-00:41

Do you know about five-year-old soccer league?

    00:41-00:43

Have you ever been to a soccer game of five-year-olds?

    00:43-00:44

    Have you seen this?

    00:45-00:52

OK, it's not exactly FIFA World Cup, if you know what I mean.

    00:52-00:56

When we talk about skill levels, certainly, they're five.

    00:56-00:56

    Come on.

    00:56-01:03

when we talk about the enforcement of the rules, it's basically trying to teach some fundamental skills of soccer.

    01:03-01:06

Well, this one mother was kind of heading up the team that Walter was on.

    01:07-01:11

And she had found out that I played soccer in high school and in college.

    01:11-01:14

And she said, would you help me coach the team?

    01:15-01:17

And I said, I would be glad to.

    01:19-01:23

And I remember coaching these little five-year-olds running around chasing the ball.

    01:23-01:26

    We had our first game.

    01:28-01:31

And the mother came to me and she said - she pulled me aside.

    01:32-01:33

I just need to give you the heads up.

    01:34-01:44

My son - I can't remember his name - she said, "My son, he has a really hard time when we get scored against." And we're working on that.

    01:44-01:50

But I just want to warn you that he might have a little bit of a meltdown if we get scored on.

    01:51-02:22

just giving you the heads up. And at this age the coaches are actually allowed to be on the field with the players. We're like running on up and down the field with the players telling them what to do. So the game starts and a couple of minutes in sure enough the other team you know scrambles down and gets the ball and the other team the other team scored on us. And when this mother had told me that her son has a meltdown when we get scored upon, she was is understating the fact.

    02:22-02:33

Because after the other team scored, they all ran over to celebrate, and I looked down, and this lady's son was standing in the goal just shredding his uniform.

    02:34-02:35

    (screaming)

    02:35-02:38

He's ripping his clothes and he's ripping his pants.

    02:39-02:44

He turned into this 30-pound Incredible Hulk if you get the image.

    02:45-02:47

He is screaming and freaking out.

    02:49-02:56

I just remember standing there going, "Wow!" Like she wasn't kidding.

    02:56-02:57

And then all of a sudden, the thought hit me, "Wait a minute.

    03:01-03:12

Where's Walter?" All of a sudden, my foster son who I was supposed to be watching on the soccer team, who I signed up to coach just so I could be close and keep an eye on him especially, he was gone.

    03:12-03:16

I'm like, "Where did I lose my foster kid?" I'm looking all over.

    03:16-03:17

    He's not with the team.

    03:17-03:18

    Where did he go?

    03:19-03:20

    I looked down.

    03:22-03:26

He was down with the other team giving hugs and high fives to them.

    03:27-03:30

And I'm standing back looking at this scene.

    03:30-03:35

Here we have a kid on our team completely freaking out because we got scored on.

    03:35-03:42

And here we have another kid on our team that's doing handshakes and high fives and hugs and celebrating with the opposing team.

    03:43-03:46

And that's why I don't coach soccer anymore.

    03:48-03:52

My point is, this unity on the soccer field was humorous.

    03:52-03:54

It was actually hilarious - the scene.

    03:55-03:59

This unity in the church is not so funny.

    04:00-04:02

And today, we're going to be talking about unity.

    04:05-04:14

Remember, Jesus told us in Acts 1 that when He leaves, the Holy Spirit would come upon His believers.

    04:14-04:16

He said you will receive power.

    04:17-04:19

Why does the Holy Spirit live in us?

    04:20-04:21

    Jesus made it very clear.

    04:22-04:23

    You will be My witnesses.

    04:23-04:28

The Holy Spirit resides in us so that we might be witnesses for Jesus Christ.

    04:29-04:33

When we get to Acts 4, Peter and John got the first taste of persecution.

    04:34-04:44

The same religious leaders that turned Jesus over to be killed are now after Jesus' followers and they threaten them to stop preaching.

    04:46-04:51

Last week we saw Peter and John went to pray with their friends - the church - for boldness.

    04:52-04:58

And this boldness was just so evident in this young and exciting church that was so unified.

    04:59-05:01

That's what we're going to see in this passage today.

    05:01-05:04

At this stage in the life of the church, we see such a unity.

    05:06-05:11

But what I want you to see in this passage is the ingredients - the key ingredient of unity.

    05:11-05:13

Write this down in your outline.

    05:13-05:18

The power of unity is displayed That unselfish church.

    05:20-05:24

We're talking about unity today, but specifically, how do we get there?

    05:24-05:34

How does a church really be knit together and enjoy a life of Christ-honoring service?

    05:36-05:41

The word of the day is "unselfish." Unselfish.

    05:42-05:43

    Look at v. 32.

    05:46-05:49

"The full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul.

    05:50-05:59

And no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own." But they had everything in common.

    06:00-06:03

You see the unselfishness in this passage.

    06:04-06:05

It says one heart and soul.

    06:06-06:09

No one said that any things that belonged to him was his own.

    06:09-06:13

We live in a culture that folds parking spaces with folding lawn chairs.

    06:14-06:15

    Like this is mine.

    06:16-06:16

    "I'm going to park here.

    06:17-06:32

This is my space." And the early church said, "Nothing that I have actually belongs to me at all." It says, "But they had everything in common." The power of unity is displayed in an unselfish church.

    06:32-06:37

This is what Jesus prayed for the church and what Jesus prayed for us.

    06:38-06:41

Specifically, John 17:21 - jot that reference down.

    06:41-06:46

It says, "This is Jesus praying in the garden for His church that is coming.

    06:47-06:58

Jesus prayed, "They may all be one just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me..." That's the witness.

    06:59-07:15

Verse 22, "that they may be one even as We are one." When Jesus was praying for His church, He prayed very specifically that we would be knit together, unified in God's love.

    07:17-07:20

And it's ironic that we have become our own problem.

    07:21-07:27

And when we become our own problem, it always boils down to one thing, and it's self-centered sin.

    07:29-07:37

When there are problems in the church, it is because someone isn't getting their own way.

    07:39-07:44

Because the very nature of sin Selfishness.

    07:46-07:50

The word "selfishness" is almost a synonym for sin.

    07:50-07:52

That's what sin always boils down to.

    07:52-07:53

    You pick any sin.

    07:54-08:01

And at its very root is the statement, I want what I want, not what God wants.

    08:02-08:04

    Sin is selfishness.

    08:04-08:06

Remember the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve.

    08:06-08:11

What was the first thing they noticed when they ate off of the tree that the Lord forbid?

    08:11-08:13

The first thing they noticed It's selves.

    08:16-08:16

    Selfishness.

    08:19-08:19

    Selfishness.

    08:19-08:21

    Sin is selfishness.

    08:22-08:25

We see that so obvious in our children.

    08:27-08:37

Those of you that have children, I'm sure you can get up and testify, children will fight over a toy not because they want it, just because someone else has it.

    08:37-08:38

    True or false?

    08:39-08:40

    True or false?

    08:40-08:41

    Shout it out.

    08:42-08:42

    No!

    08:43-08:43

    True!

    08:45-08:47

This happens in our home all the time.

    08:47-08:50

Our two boys will fight over the PlayStation.

    08:52-08:55

The thing sat there for three hours and nobody even noticed it.

    08:56-09:05

Then all of a sudden, they're both clawing each other's throats out trying to get the PlayStation, and 15 minutes later, they'll be on to fighting about something else.

    09:08-09:09

    What's up with that?

    09:09-09:10

    It's selfishness.

    09:12-09:13

    Sin is selfishness.

    09:15-09:19

But you see, Aaron and I didn't sit our children down and teach them how to be selfish.

    09:19-09:20

    That's inherent.

    09:20-09:22

That's part of the sin nature.

    09:24-09:26

Some people never grow out of it, really.

    09:28-09:36

We all have the tendency, but some never - even those who come to Christ - never really allow Christ to grow them in this area.

    09:39-09:41

    Selfishness is a unity killer.

    09:43-09:51

If you're in a marriage and you're insisting on getting your own way, you're going to destroy your marriage.

    09:53-09:53

    It's your workplace.

    09:54-09:59

If you always insist on everybody doing things your way, you might not have that job for long.

    10:01-10:03

But this attitude creeps into the church.

    10:04-10:07

What does this church have to offer me?

    10:09-10:19

Instead of coming to a church and saying, "What do I have that I can offer this church?" As we look at this text, I want us to be thinking in the back of our minds, what kind of a church do you want Harvest Bible Chapel to be?

    10:20-10:25

I imagine everyone in here would say I want this church to be Christlike and unselfish love.

    10:27-10:28

That's what I want for this church.

    10:29-10:30

    Christlike and unselfish love.

    10:31-10:32

    Well, that starts with you.

    10:33-10:38

We're going to look at the example in the days and the church was really living it.

    10:40-10:46

Because next week - spoiler alert - next week when we get to Acts 5, we're going to see the first problems in the church.

    10:47-10:55

And in this passage, Luke is really highlighting this is what it was like when the church was young and exciting and on task.

    10:57-10:59

So jot these three things down today.

    11:00-11:02

    I am unselfish when...

    11:02-11:03

You want unity for this church?

    11:03-11:06

    result from you being unselfish.

    11:07-11:11

I am unselfish when, number one, I keep my eyes on the mission.

    11:13-11:16

I am unselfish when I keep my eyes on the mission.

    11:17-11:18

    Look at v. 33.

    11:19-11:41

It says, "And with great power, the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all." and this early church was giving us a statement that said this is the thing that typified the early church, and it wasn't their potluck dinners.

    11:42-11:45

It wasn't the colors of the hymn books.

    11:47-11:57

The thing that typified this church was the mission that they were rallying around and behind.

    11:57-12:03

With great power, the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

    12:05-12:14

They were so focused and driven by the mission that they didn't have the time, the energy, or the interest to think of themselves.

    12:16-12:24

Because when you do, when you start thinking about yourself instead of thinking about the mission, then we start thinking about our preferences.

    12:25-12:35

And when we start thinking about our preferences, something happens - in our culture and it starts to happen to us, but we come to the church with a consumer mentality.

    12:36-12:40

We start to think of the church like Walmart or Target.

    12:41-12:45

To say, okay, which church is going to give me what I want?

    12:46-12:55

And the problem is the church has bought into the consumer mentality, so churches in turn do what they can to try to make people happy.

    12:55-12:56

It's the supply and demand thing.

    12:57-13:01

People are like, where can I find a church is going to make me happy.

    13:01-13:06

And now people are sitting in churches - leaders in churches are going, we need to find what's going to make people happy.

    13:06-13:11

And if we offer them that, they're going to come to our church.

    13:12-13:13

    So what do you want?

    13:14-13:16

Well, we want just a little worship.

    13:17-13:19

And we want really, really safe prayers.

    13:19-13:22

And we don't really want to get involved with people.

    13:22-13:25

In fact, that small group video that you showed is just about perfect.

    13:25-13:27

    And we want short messages.

    13:28-13:30

And we would prefer that you never mention sin.

    13:31-13:34

And you really have to contextualize.

    13:34-13:37

You know, talk about things that are interesting to me.

    13:37-13:39

    Not too much Bible now.

    13:42-13:50

If an unsaved person feels comfortable in church week after week after week, then there's a real problem with what that church is doing.

    13:51-13:57

Because the early church, very clearly, your Bible tells you Great power.

    13:59-14:02

The apostles were giving their testimony to what?

    14:02-14:04

The resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

    14:07-14:11

The early church was focusing on the very thing that the Sanhedrin had just forbid.

    14:13-14:20

And the end of verse 33 says, "and great grace was upon them all." They were seeing God at work.

    14:21-14:22

    See, that's the result.

    14:23-14:30

I heard this expression a long time ago that always stuck with me, and said that God's work done in God's way gets God's results.

    14:32-14:33

And that's what this church was saying.

    14:33-14:35

God's work done in God's way gets God's results.

    14:36-14:40

That's why so often at Harvest Bible Chapel we remind you of our mission.

    14:40-14:42

Our mission is to make disciples.

    14:42-14:45

The fulfillment of the Great Commission and the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    14:45-14:47

We remind you often of our pillars.

    14:49-14:50

    Unapologetic preaching.

    14:51-14:52

    Unashamed worship.

    14:52-14:53

    Unceasing prayer.

    14:55-14:56

    Unashamed boldness.

    14:59-14:59

    Unafraid boldness.

    15:01-15:05

The reason we keep going back to that is to remind us why we're here and who we are.

    15:05-15:10

This is the kind of church - let's keep our eyes focused on the mission.

    15:12-15:13

That's going to keep us unselfish.

    15:15-15:21

When we come to church, and it's not about you and it's not about me, it's about what did Jesus tell us we should be about?

    15:23-15:29

I'm unselfish when I stay focused Secondly, I'm unselfish when I come to give.

    15:31-15:34

When I come to give, look at verses 34 and 35.

    15:37-15:39

How would you like to be a part of a church like this?

    15:40-15:43

It says, "There was not a needy person among them.

    15:45-15:54

For as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them, brought the proceeds of what was sold, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

    15:54-15:58

and it was distributed to each as any had need.

    16:00-16:01

    I come to give not.

    16:03-16:04

    I expect to receive.

    16:04-16:08

You see, we talked about the consumer mentality that has crept into the church.

    16:08-16:11

The consumer mentality looks to get.

    16:12-16:13

    Where can I get?

    16:15-16:16

    That's not everyone.

    16:18-16:22

I love talking to people about their church, whether they come here or they worship somewhere else.

    16:23-16:34

I want to talk to people about where they worship, and you can tell a lot about what someone thinks about their church when they answer this question.

    16:34-16:37

I like to ask people, what do you like about your church?

    16:38-16:39

What do you like about your church?

    16:42-16:43

    Now, we all receive.

    16:46-16:48

This isn't a guilt trip sermon.

    16:48-16:51

Because at times in the church, we all receive.

    16:51-16:53

    Receiving should happen very naturally.

    16:54-16:55

    It can't be your motivator.

    16:57-17:00

In the early church, the motivator was in the giving.

    17:03-17:05

    Sacrificial, monetary giving.

    17:06-17:17

And did you see in the text, their idea of sharing, their idea of meeting needs was not, ok, well, I guess I can be generous with the church.

    17:17-17:20

Do I have any extra stuff in my closet?

    17:20-17:27

And your wife is like, "You know, you have that old nasty purple and gray Baja jacket that I hate.

    17:28-17:38

Why don't you donate that to the church?" So I bring this thing down to the church that my dog would be ashamed to sleep on, and I donate that, and then I feel really good about myself.

    17:38-17:40

    Like, yeah, I'm really generous.

    17:42-17:44

And that's not really the definition of generosity.

    17:45-17:47

Look at how the early church gave.

    17:47-17:57

Again, it says, "As many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds." That's sacrificial giving.

    17:59-18:07

You understand, when you sell a piece of property and then take the money and give that money, there's no turning back from that.

    18:09-18:11

    That's burning the bridges.

    18:11-18:20

You're saying I am so committed that I am giving in such a way There's no way I'm going to get that back.

    18:22-18:26

But their mentality was not what can I afford, but how can I give more?

    18:26-18:33

It's not enough for me to give just out of the income that I receive.

    18:34-18:38

Are there creative ways that I can give more beyond what I'm able?

    18:39-18:41

They said, well, I have stuff that I can sell.

    18:44-18:45

    See, it's all God's.

    18:47-18:53

It's a blessing to be able to give back to God a portion of what He gives to us.

    18:53-18:54

    It's a blessing.

    18:55-19:09

I need to insert this because there are some people that would criticize Christians that don't embrace a particular political ideology - socialism.

    19:10-19:14

Christians should totally understand socialism because it's in the Bible.

    19:14-19:21

You look at this passage here next - You know, here's why you should embrace socialism, Christians.

    19:21-19:22

    The early church did it.

    19:22-19:31

Isn't it a shame that the Bible says that the early church were socialists and Christians are not wanting to vote in a socialist president?

    19:32-19:35

    And this is not socialism.

    19:36-19:43

If the Bible were going to promote socialism, it would have to say something like this.

    19:44-19:55

So Rome forced the church to give to the government, and then Rome made sure that everybody's needs were taken care of as the government saw fit.

    19:55-19:58

That is not what happened at all.

    19:59-20:07

What we see in this passage was this giving was initiated and led by the church, not the government.

    20:09-20:12

When it comes to this type of giving, there's three words.

    20:12-20:21

We've talked all about this in the "I Love to Give" series, but I'm going to remind you, giving - New Testament giving should be three things.

    20:22-20:25

It should be sacrificial, it should be voluntary, and it should be joyful.

    20:26-20:30

It should be sacrificial, it should be voluntary, and it should be joyful.

    20:31-20:32

    That is generous giving.

    20:34-20:36

You are under no compulsion to give at this church.

    20:36-20:39

I don't know what anybody gives outside of my family.

    20:39-20:40

And I don't want to know.

    20:40-20:42

And we have things set up I don't know.

    20:44-20:44

    I don't care.

    20:45-20:48

Because that is an act of worship between you and the Lord.

    20:48-20:50

That's not between you and me.

    20:50-20:52

That's not between you and Harvest Bible Chapel.

    20:52-20:54

That's not between you and James MacDonald or whatever.

    20:54-21:01

That is an act of worship between you and the Lord just as you're singing is an act of worship between you and the Lord.

    21:03-21:04

    So your giving is voluntary.

    21:06-21:10

And we saw in the "I Love to Give" series that God loves a cheerful giver.

    21:10-21:11

    It should be joyful.

    21:12-21:12

    You should be joyful.

    21:14-21:22

So at this point, the apostles distributed the offering that came in.

    21:24-21:27

We see another principle here when we come to give as part of our worship.

    21:29-21:33

You need to give and you need to let go because you're giving to God.

    21:34-21:40

Sometimes people give to the church with a caveat or with an earmark.

    21:41-21:47

I'm going to give, but I want this specifically - I want to give this to the church but it's specifically for this.

    21:47-21:53

I want to make sure that this money is not used for whatever.

    21:54-21:56

That's a foreign concept to the Bible.

    21:58-22:10

What we see in the New Testament was these church members trusted these leaders You're faithful with the offering.

    22:12-22:13

And when you give, let go.

    22:13-22:16

You're not giving to me, you're giving to God.

    22:17-22:19

    I'm unselfish when?

    22:19-22:21

    I'm unselfish when?

    22:21-22:22

First of all, when I keep my eyes on the mission.

    22:23-22:25

Secondly, when I come to give.

    22:26-22:30

And finally, I'm unselfish when I follow godly examples.

    22:31-22:33

    I follow godly examples.

    22:34-22:35

    verses 36 and 37.

    22:37-23:07

It says, "Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas," which means "son of encouragement," "a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet." You know, this Joseph, who we know better as Barnabas, becomes a prominent character in the book of Acts.

    23:07-23:08

    He becomes a missionary.

    23:08-23:10

    He becomes Paul's companion.

    23:10-23:18

I was kind of laughing reading this passage because Luke, the doctor, wrote the book of Acts, and he's so into the details.

    23:19-23:24

And it's all important, but it's just sort of funny when you see the personality come out.

    23:24-23:28

Because Luke doesn't just mention Joseph Barnabas.

    23:28-23:31

He goes into the whole pedigree thing.

    23:31-23:35

He's a Levite and he was from Cyprus.

    23:37-23:41

What else? He lived on 113 Sycamore Lane, apartment B.

    23:42-23:44

He liked Captain Crunch's Crunch Berries for breakfast.

    23:45-23:51

Luke gives us all these details about this guy's background, but really doesn't tell us anything at all about the property.

    23:51-23:53

    And it doesn't really matter.

    23:54-23:58

The point simply is he's holding this man up as an example.

    24:00-24:02

This is what the early church was doing.

    24:02-24:04

He says, by the way, you guys know Barnabas?

    24:06-24:07

    He was leading the way.

    24:09-24:12

He was leading the way in this type of sacrifice.

    24:15-24:23

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we have some tremendous examples here of this unselfish attitude that leads to unity in the church.

    24:23-24:30

One in particular at the risk of embarrassing the family, I think of the orcs when they first came to the church into our first party with the pastor.

    24:31-24:36

At that point in the church, we didn't have a lot of youth in the church, and we were wanting to start a youth group.

    24:37-24:58

And you see, consumer mentality would have had Mark and Kristen say to each other, well, we need to find a church that's going to be more what we want for the kids, but at the party with the pastor, they said our attitude is we can be a part - by sticking around, to be a part of making it happen.

    24:59-25:16

Today we have a tremendous youth program because of families like the Oertz and the Harers and other families - I don't want to start mentioning them, I'm going to forget - committed to, "I'm going to be part of this and I'm going to make this happen." That's an unselfish attitude.

    25:17-25:19

Committed to the mission, unified in Christ.

    25:20-25:23

You see in the passage, there's two things these godly examples do.

    25:25-25:27

These are the things these godly examples do.

    25:27-25:28

    First of all, they encourage.

    25:30-25:39

Joseph was such an encourager that they changed his name to "son of encouragement." That's unselfish.

    25:41-25:42

Selfishness says put the spotlight on me.

    25:43-25:44

    Congratulate me. Give me kudos.

    25:44-25:46

Tell me what a great job I'm doing.

    25:46-25:48

    This is the unselfish attitude.

    25:48-25:51

This guy was always looking at how he could encourage somebody else.

    25:51-25:53

"Worship, that was fantastic this morning.

    25:53-25:55

    Great job." Encouraging.

    25:55-25:57

    Always looking to give.

    25:57-26:01

Dan, you and Elisha do such a great job with the youth that we just mentioned.

    26:01-26:04

And I'm just hearing so many good things.

    26:04-26:04

    Keep it up.

    26:04-26:05

    It's encouragement.

    26:05-26:12

It's looking outside of yourself on how you can give somebody else a little push.

    26:13-26:17

This guy was so known for that, that they're like, we're just going to change your name, dude.

    26:17-26:19

We're not calling you Joe anymore.

    26:19-26:20

We're going to call you Barnabas.

    26:21-26:22

Because that's all you do is lift people up.

    26:24-26:26

The Bible were still being written.

    26:27-26:29

What would they change your name to?

    26:31-26:36

Your role in the church and the way that you do ministry in the church, what would they change your name to?

    26:38-26:39

    A little food for thought.

    26:40-26:44

But we're all struggling with something and a little encouragement goes a long way.

    26:46-26:47

That's one thing Godly examples do.

    26:47-26:49

    They're constantly looking to encourage.

    26:50-26:51

    So unselfish.

    26:53-27:01

And finally, right in the text, unselfish godly examples they encourage and secondly, they give.

    27:02-27:04

As we mentioned before, they give.

    27:04-27:07

This Barnabas, he wasn't just a leader.

    27:07-27:15

"Do as I say, not as I do." He led by example - verse 37 - by selling a field that belonged to him.

    27:18-27:23

If everyone followed your example in giving, What would the mission of this church be funded?

    27:25-27:27

Again, I'm not cheering anybody out.

    27:27-27:40

You guys have always been tremendously generous and faithful, whether it's Moldova or Romania or this family that we met at the Ronald McDonald House that you never even met that we're struggling.

    27:41-27:43

    You've always been so generous.

    27:44-27:46

We're going to be calling on that again.

    27:47-27:50

Like last week when we saw the early church prayed for boldness.

    27:51-27:53

Today, we're going to stop and we're going to pray for boldness.

    27:54-28:01

Today, we have a huge opportunity to make an impact for the Gospel in Asia.

    28:02-28:05

And just as we see the example of this early church, let's follow that example.

    28:06-28:14

At Harvest Bible Chapel, when we talk about missions, we talk about praying, giving, and going.

    28:15-28:17

Every single one of us can pray.

    28:19-28:21

Every one of us has something to give.

    28:22-28:25

We're going to be calling on some of us to go.

    28:26-28:37

Father in Heaven, as we close our time here today in Your Word, I thank You for the example of the early church.

    28:39-28:49

Father, we know in every church, there's going to be problems, there's going to be conflict, there's going to be things that can be done better by Your grace and in Your power.

    28:49-28:50

    We work through those things.

    28:51-28:55

But today, Father, we look at a time in Your church that we don't see criticism.

    28:56-29:01

We don't see, "Oh, they could have done this better." Or, "This was lacking." We see a lot of that in Your Word.

    29:02-29:07

All of the instructions to the Corinthian church and the churches in the Galatia region and Ephesus and all of that.

    29:08-29:18

But how sweet to see a passage of Scripture that talks about a period of time in the life of Your church where things were really happening.

    29:19-29:24

The Gospel was being proclaimed and needs were being met and people were being loved.

    29:24-29:38

And it was just so easy for me to think about this church as I'm studying your Word because I see the same type of excitement, the same type of generosity, the same type of love.

    29:38-29:45

Honestly, I see the same type of unselfishness in our church that we see in this early church.

    29:45-29:50

And Father, I know, in Your Word, the next chapter, problems are going to come.

    29:50-29:55

And Father, You know in our church, problems arise from time to time and we want to deal with them.

    29:56-30:03

I thank You for this predominant, overarching attitude of unselfishness that we're not here for us.

    30:04-30:06

We are here for Jesus Christ.

    30:06-30:10

We present ourselves before You, Father, as Your servants.

    30:11-30:12

We are here to advance the Kingdom.

    30:13-30:20

We are here to proclaim the Gospel and we are here to love each other as the church, and we are here to love a lost and dying world.

    30:21-30:29

Whether it's in the Pittsburgh community or Chiang Mai, Thailand, Father, You have called us to the ends of the earth with Your glorious mission.

    30:30-30:33

    Father, stir our hearts.

    30:37-30:39

    Remove selfishness from within us.

    30:41-30:42

    I glorify Your name.

    30:43-30:45

I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 4:32-37

  1. How does selfishness destroy unity? How does focusing on Jesus squelch selfishness? (Acts 4:32-33)

  2. What are creative ways YOU can give to the mission, locally and abroad? Sell something, earn money on the side, etc? (Acts 4:34-35)

  3. How can you set an example like Barnabas without (pridefully) drawing attention to yourself? (Acts 4:36-37)

Breakout Questions:

Pray for unity at HBCPN! Specifically that we:

  • Stay focused on the mission.

  • Cultivate an attitude of giving, not taking.

  • Set an example for other believers.

Power and Witness - Power for Boldness
Jeff Miller
  • 00:00-00:04

Open up your Bibles with me please to the book of Acts in chapter 4.

    00:05-00:16

While you're turning there, if you've been around here for a while, you realize that we are a church - we say this from time to time - we're a church that's built on four pillars.

    00:17-00:21

Our first pillar is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    00:22-00:28

God said some things in His Word, and we're not going to apologize for repeating them.

    00:29-00:35

Our second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus in worship as we had done earlier and as we do every week.

    00:35-00:39

Coming together and lifting our voices up in praise and adoration.

    00:39-00:43

Our third pillar is believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    00:44-00:51

Our fourth pillar is sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    00:51-00:54

And today we're going to be talking about those last two pillars.

    00:55-00:58

We're going to be talking about prayer, and we're going to be talking about boldness.

    00:59-01:00

    What is boldness?

    01:01-01:07

Understand, when we talk about boldness, sometimes our minds go immediately to obnoxiousness.

    01:07-01:08

    That's not boldness.

    01:10-01:14

Boldness also is not being self-righteous when it comes to sharing our beliefs.

    01:15-01:24

Boldness is simply this - if you don't know the definition, you need to write it down - but boldness biblically is this - when God gives me opportunity, God will share His Word with others.

    01:25-01:26

    That's boldness.

    01:27-01:29

    It's not overly assertive.

    01:29-01:35

It's not "you're going to hear this whether you want to or not, so sit down." That's not boldness.

    01:35-01:39

Boldness is when God gives me opportunity to share His Word.

    01:40-01:43

I'm going to open my mouth and share His Word.

    01:43-01:51

And we're getting back to the book of Acts after our series "Incomparable God" through the book of Isaiah.

    01:51-01:54

But just a quick review We're all in the same page.

    01:55-01:56

Where are we in the book of Acts?

    01:57-02:08

In Acts 1, we saw that Jesus promised you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

    02:08-02:16

Jesus promised that when He left, His followers would receive power so that we might be His witnesses.

    02:18-02:21

    In Acts 2, Pentecost.

    02:21-02:31

The Holy Spirit came bringing the power that Jesus promised and we saw 3,000 people saved as Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, got up to preach.

    02:32-02:44

And in Acts 3, if you recall, Peter and John on their way to the temple healed a lame man that was well known by everyone.

    02:44-02:45

    It gathered quite a crowd.

    02:45-02:48

So Peter preached the Gospel to the crowd.

    02:48-02:49

It did not go over well.

    02:50-03:07

Because in Acts 4, Peter and John were arrested by the temple guard and put on trial and had to stand before the Sanhedrin who couldn't deny that this man that everyone knew was lame was now walking around.

    03:07-03:16

They couldn't deny the healing, so they had no choice but to let them go because the crowds were so excited about what was happening.

    03:19-03:27

I recall way back when we shared that message about the healing and the fallout with the trial, we saw a real boldness from Peter and John.

    03:29-03:30

    Just take note of this.

    03:31-03:40

In the book of Acts, and in the United States of America, being bold for Jesus comes at greater and greater prices.

    03:42-03:43

    Here's what I mean.

    03:43-03:47

In Acts 4, which we read and studied, They were threatened.

    03:48-03:51

They were basically told, "Ok, you guys can go, but shut your mouths.

    03:52-03:54

Stop preaching Jesus." They were threatened.

    03:56-04:02

When you get to Acts 5, you see that they were beaten for sharing the Gospel.

    04:03-04:09

When you get to Acts 7, you see that they were being killed for sharing the Gospel.

    04:11-04:13

This sort of escalation is coming to America.

    04:15-04:21

witnessing to Jesus once upon a time, "Well, it's discouraged." And then you're warned not to do it.

    04:23-04:24

Then you're threatened not to do it.

    04:25-04:27

And then you're sued for doing it.

    04:28-04:29

    What's next?

    04:30-04:39

Is it really inconceivable that the days might be coming that we are going to be beaten and imprisoned?

    04:40-04:45

Some of us executed for sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    04:45-04:46

We see the Bible. Those days are coming.

    04:48-04:49

We see the pattern in Acts.

    04:50-04:52

I think we're on that track in America.

    04:53-04:54

    So what's our response?

    04:55-04:56

    What's our response to that?

    04:56-05:08

Well, Jesus gives us power to witness, and the world says, "Stop witnessing!" True followers of Jesus Christ want to be bold, no matter the cost.

    05:09-05:15

I understand that this message today is not going to resonate people here.

    05:16-05:43

If you're sitting here, and you are a true follower of Jesus Christ, if you have been born again, if you understand all this that we've been talking about, if you understand we have the power of the Holy Spirit, because God wants me to be His witness, then you're sitting here saying what I have on your outline, you're saying, "I want to be bold for Jesus." I want to give you a chance to say that.

    05:45-05:46

    Okay, so prepare yourself.

    05:47-05:49

I want to be bold for Jesus.

    05:50-05:51

    Now you say it.

    05:52-05:53

That was great out of the gate.

    05:54-05:55

    Because we are not ashamed.

    05:55-05:56

    Let's say it again.

    05:58-05:59

    Do you mean that?

    06:00-06:01

    Do you really mean that?

    06:01-06:02

What about when things get hard?

    06:03-06:06

What about when people tell you to shut up with your stupid church talk?

    06:06-06:07

What are you going to say?

    06:09-06:10

I want to be bold for Jesus.

    06:12-06:15

Maybe you're kind of saying that today.

    06:16-06:20

You believe and you have been born again and you understand the need for it.

    06:21-06:30

I want you to look at this text with me today because when we look at the world, being bold looks like a tall order.

    06:31-06:34

But when we look at His Word, we see that we are well equipped.

    06:35-06:38

Obviously, because we have the power of the Holy Spirit.

    06:39-06:42

Our theme is for the whole year, Acts 1-8.

    06:43-06:51

But what we're going to see in this text today is we have some other things that are going to help us along the way to be bold for Jesus Christ.

    06:51-06:53

It's all right here in the text.

    06:53-06:55

I want to be bold for Jesus, number one.

    06:56-07:00

So I need the church to encourage me.

    07:01-07:03

I need the church to encourage me.

    07:03-07:05

Look at verse 23, Acts 4.

    07:06-07:17

because when they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and elders had said to them.

    07:18-07:19

    Let's stop right there.

    07:20-07:22

So when Peter and John were released, what does your Bible say?

    07:22-07:26

    They went to their associates.

    07:27-07:29

No, that's not what my Bible says.

    07:29-07:32

It says when they were released, they went to their colleagues.

    07:33-07:34

My Bible doesn't say that either.

    07:35-07:39

They went to their co-workers, their associates, their - what was it?

    07:40-07:41

    What does your Bible say?

    07:42-07:43

    They went to their what?

    07:43-07:45

    They went to their friends.

    07:46-07:50

And you need to make note first of all that this is how you should view the church.

    07:51-07:53

This is how you should view the church.

    07:55-08:02

If you don't view this church as a place where you come and where your friends are here, this is where I belong.

    08:03-08:05

I say this with all the love I can muster.

    08:05-08:07

Maybe you should find a church where that is happening.

    08:10-08:17

Because this should be the place where you say, "These are my friends." Where else can we be?

    08:18-08:23

Where else can we go to be helped in our Christian walk by like-minded people?

    08:24-08:25

Where else is that going to happen?

    08:26-08:27

At your workplace? At the gym?

    08:29-08:39

Where else can you go to be with people to understand a besetting sin or a struggle that you're having, where else can you go to get that kind of understanding?

    08:40-08:46

Where else can you go where people are going to be sympathizing with whatever is causing you sorrow?

    08:48-08:53

Where else can you go to be encouraged when you're discouraged?

    08:55-09:02

Notice the first thing that Peter and John did after this trial, after the threats, It looked like a scary ordeal.

    09:03-09:17

The Bible doesn't say they were scared, but I'll tell you, if you put yourself in the scenario, you have to note the first place they went after this encounter was to be with their friends.

    09:19-09:19

    The church.

    09:20-09:22

    There's boldness in groups.

    09:22-09:24

I don't have to sell you on that.

    09:25-09:26

We see it with kids, don't we?

    09:26-09:37

You get a kid by himself versus that same kid with a group of other kids will say and do things that he would never do when he's by himself.

    09:38-09:40

I could tell you several stories of that.

    09:42-09:45

Kids getting awfully bold when their friends are around.

    09:45-09:48

Now that's a negative example, but the principle is the same.

    09:48-09:52

There's safety, strength, and boldness when you're part of a group.

    09:53-09:54

Let me ask you, who's encouraging you?

    09:55-09:58

Who's encouraging you in your Christian walk right now?

    10:00-10:07

Whether you're going through persecution on any level, or whatever hardship you might be going through, who's encouraging you right now?

    10:09-10:12

That's why we encourage you at Harvest Bible Chapel, you have to be plugged in.

    10:12-10:17

Not just attending the church, but identifying with the church.

    10:18-10:24

That's why we're always encouraging you to join a small group if you haven't already.

    10:26-10:30

    Email smallgroups@harvestpittsburghnorth.org you plugged in.

    10:31-10:34

But listen, you were never meant to do this on your own.

    10:34-10:37

The Bible says you were called to be a part of the body.

    10:38-10:40

You need the church to encourage you.

    10:41-10:44

I need the church to encourage me.

    10:46-10:47

We were never meant to do it on our own.

    10:49-10:53

Secondly, I want to be bold for Jesus, so I need the church to encourage me.

    10:54-10:56

Secondly, I need the Bible to equip me.

    10:57-11:03

I need the Bible to equip me You pick up in verse 24 to the end of the passage we're looking at today.

    11:03-11:04

    This is all a prayer.

    11:04-11:06

And I want you to notice ahead of time, be looking for this.

    11:07-11:08

    They prayed Scripture.

    11:08-11:11

They prayed God's Word back to Him.

    11:12-11:14

Look at verses 24 through 26.

    11:15-11:35

It says, "And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, 'Sovereign God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who threw through the mouth of our Father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit." Why did the Gentiles rage and the people's plot in vain?

    11:36-11:44

The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against His anointed.

    11:46-11:48

    That's a quote from Psalm 2.

    11:48-11:50

    The first two verses.

    11:51-12:00

Why? Why are the Gentiles, the peoples, the kings and rulers - Why are they all going against the Lord and His Anointed?

    12:02-12:15

You see what the disciples were doing here, what they were praying, they were saying, God, this is exactly - what's happening to us today is exactly what Your Word says is going to happen.

    12:15-12:20

It is the whole world versus the Lord and His Anointed.

    12:20-12:25

In other words, it's the whole world versus God and Jesus Christ.

    12:25-12:34

"Yeah, that's what your Word says, and that's what we see." Verse 27, "For truly in this city..." They're commenting on this verse.

    12:34-12:45

"For truly in this city, there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed..." That's the one he's talking about in verse 2.

    12:46-12:47

    Psalm 2.

    12:47-13:02

"...whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel." You know, God, way back in the 2nd Psalm, it's the world versus You and Your Christ.

    13:04-13:05

    We certainly saw that.

    13:05-13:18

Verse 28, "To do whatever Your hand and Your plan had predestined to take place." You see, God didn't just know about these events.

    13:19-13:22

God was in control of these events.

    13:24-13:32

Did you notice they opened the prayer about creation, and then they mentioned fulfilled prophecy, and then they stated God's sovereignty.

    13:32-13:38

Did you see that? In other words, here's what they were praying. "God, you're in control.

    13:39-13:43

God, you're in control. God, you're in control. God, you're in control." Do you see that?

    13:43-13:57

"God, you're in control You called it and you controlled it.

    13:58-14:00

Even if it doesn't look like it.

    14:01-14:03

Even if it doesn't feel like it.

    14:04-14:05

You have to catch this today.

    14:05-14:08

If you don't catch anything else I say today, you have to listen to this.

    14:10-14:16

Church, you have to learn to let God's Word equip you to evaluate life.

    14:17-14:28

In other words, you need to learn to look at life - your life, your family's lives, world events - these things through the lens of God's Word.

    14:31-14:38

Because some people are genuinely shocked at hardship in life.

    14:38-14:43

And please hear me, I don't want this to come across as being calloused.

    14:45-14:46

I want you to hear what I'm saying.

    14:48-14:52

    Hardship is normal for now.

    14:54-14:56

Some people seem so genuinely shocked.

    14:57-15:17

The Bible actually tells us in 1 Peter 4:12, Peter says, "Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you as though something strange were happening to you." So many people seem like they're caught so off guard when hardship comes.

    15:18-15:19

    Like, "I can't believe this!

    15:19-15:24

I thought life was going to be easy!" I just told you that.

    15:25-15:27

But I thought my life was going to be perfect.

    15:29-15:31

It was never advertised to be that way.

    15:33-15:37

Peter says don't be surprised like something strange is happening to you.

    15:38-15:39

Like bad stuff happens to other people.

    15:39-15:41

Bad stuff doesn't happen to me.

    15:41-15:42

Bad stuff's going to happen to you.

    15:44-15:46

    Bad stuff happens to me.

    15:47-15:49

Please hear me, I'm telling you this because I love you.

    15:51-16:05

Too many people just get completely - all the wind knocked out of their spiritual sails so to speak, because hardship seems like such a strange thing.

    16:05-16:09

I've talked to people who have said things like this.

    16:10-16:10

    Things like this.

    16:11-16:23

"I'm mad at God because He took my mother from me." "God took my mother from me, so I'm mad at God." "I was yelling at God." God allowed my husband to leave me.

    16:23-16:25

You know, God could have stopped that, but God allowed it.

    16:25-16:28

I'm mad at God for what He allowed to happen in my life.

    16:29-16:31

God allowed my kid to be sick.

    16:33-16:36

My kid could have been born healthy, and He allowed my kid to be sick.

    16:36-16:37

I'm mad at God for that.

    16:39-16:49

When we say those things, when we are mad at God for hardships, we are not looking at life from a biblical perspective.

    16:50-16:51

    We're just not.

    16:52-16:58

The Bible says when Adam brought sin into the world, the whole world came under a curse.

    16:59-17:01

We're not going to turn there. You can read this.

    17:01-17:12

But Genesis 3 says the results of sin being in the world - struggling relationships, struggling to survive in a hard world, and death.

    17:14-17:18

That's what the Bible promises because of sin in this world now.

    17:21-17:27

Christ redeemed us and is preparing a new place for us - a place of perfection.

    17:28-17:33

And He said if He goes to prepare a place for us, He will come again to take us to be with Him.

    17:33-17:37

Someday we will join Christ in this place of perfection.

    17:37-17:41

But in the meantime, what should we expect?

    17:42-17:44

What should we expect in the meantime?

    17:46-17:49

We should expect life to hurt.

    17:51-17:53

We should expect life to hurt a lot.

    17:54-17:55

    I've had my share.

    17:57-17:58

Many of you know my story.

    17:59-18:02

Our story of some of the things that we've been through.

    18:02-18:05

I'm not saying my story's any better or any worse than yours.

    18:05-18:06

I'm not saying that at all.

    18:06-18:07

Here's what I am saying - we all have our share.

    18:09-18:10

    We all have our share.

    18:11-18:25

But when you are equipped by God's Word The disciples were, "You're expecting hardships to be part of living in this world." You know, I found this verse in the Bible.

    18:27-18:32

John 16:33, Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble." I found that verse. Did you find that verse?

    18:33-18:34

    I found that verse.

    18:34-18:37

It says, "In this world you will have trouble." So I kept looking.

    18:37-19:15

I was trying to find a verse that said something like, "In this world, life will be perfect." "In this world, you will have that you want. In this world everything will be optimal all the time. I could not find that verse. The Bible speaks of heaven with such terminology. This world was never advertised to be like that. And in our passage, the particular context we're looking at today, you can't be surprised that following Christ is going to become harder, less popular, and more costly. You thought you'd be popular?

    19:15-19:17

You thought following Jesus would make you popular?

    19:17-19:21

Well, the Bible says the world's going to hate you purely by association.

    19:21-19:30

Jesus said, Mark 13, 13, He said, "And you will be hated by all for my name's sake." Jesus never sugarcoated it.

    19:31-19:34

He says, "You follow me, people are going to hate you." Why?

    19:35-19:40

"Just because you're following me, that's why." So we're not surprised at this.

    19:41-19:54

hasn't blindsided us or surprised us. The disciples didn't run home and hide under the bed after this trial. I thought this was gonna be easy. Did you hear the mean things the Sanhedrin said about us?

    19:54-20:08

They didn't do that. They ran to their friends and they prayed to God together and they said basically their prayer they said yeah the Bible's true Everyone hates God and Jesus, just like you said.

    20:10-20:17

They were equipped to handle this persecution because they knew and they trusted God's Word.

    20:18-20:29

Notice they said in verse 25, "Through the mouth of our father David, your servants said by the Holy Spirit." They were acknowledging David said this stuff, but it wasn't really David saying this stuff.

    20:29-20:34

It was the Holy Spirit, God. It was you speaking these things through David.

    20:36-20:39

They were equipped because they knew and trusted God's Word.

    20:40-20:46

And I'm telling you today that you can handle anything when you know the Word of God.

    20:47-20:48

    Yes, it's going to hurt.

    20:48-20:49

    I'm not minimizing that.

    20:50-20:51

    Life is going to hurt.

    20:51-20:53

Yes, you're going to experience disappointment.

    20:54-21:06

But like the disciples, you're going to be able to take a step back I say, you know, as hard as it is, God said this is the way that it's going to be for now.

    21:07-21:13

For my few years of shuffling my feet on this earth, God said it was going to be like this.

    21:15-21:16

But it's not going to be like this forever.

    21:18-21:22

So if you want to be bold for Jesus, first of all, you need the church.

    21:22-21:24

I need the church to encourage me.

    21:24-21:26

I need the Bible to equip me.

    21:28-21:33

Finally for today, I need prayer to empower me.

    21:34-21:36

I need prayer to empower me.

    21:36-21:37

Let's pick up in our text.

    21:38-21:40

    Verse 29, they're still praying.

    21:40-21:53

"And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to Your servants to continue to speak Your Word with all boldness." Stop there. Look at the words.

    21:54-21:54

    Every word's important.

    22:05-22:10

I'm praying that this church leads the charge to bring that concept back.

    22:11-22:12

    We're not entitled people.

    22:13-22:14

    We're not presumptuous people.

    22:15-22:16

    We're not demanding people.

    22:16-22:18

The disciple says, "We're just your servants, God.

    22:19-22:26

You are an awesome, loving, and merciful Master, and we are your servants." And we're not entitled people.

    22:26-22:29

"No, I'm too good for persecution.

    22:30-22:41

This stuff shouldn't happen to me. I'm entitled." They're like, "Yeah, well, we're just servants." "We're just servants." "Servants to do what?" "To continue to speak Your Word." Do you see that?

    22:42-22:44

"Continue to speak Your Word." The Gospel.

    22:44-22:50

They're saying, "We don't want to lose focus." You have to know something, I pray for this church all the time.

    22:50-22:54

I pray this all the time for the church, is that we would stay on mission.

    22:55-23:06

Because it's so easy when it gets hard, when people aren't responding to the gospel and sharing the word of God and trying to be a genuine, authentic church.

    23:07-23:09

It's hard when that's not the popular thing.

    23:09-23:13

And it's easy to start thinking about shortcuts.

    23:13-23:16

Well, what if we tried to be more culturally relevant?

    23:16-23:28

Maybe if we just kind of watered it down or sugarcoated it just a little, not denying the message, but what if we just turned it back just a little bit and made it just a little more comfortable for people.

    23:29-23:31

And I never want to do that.

    23:32-23:35

I pray constantly, God, keep us on mission.

    23:35-23:47

I don't want to get distracted spending three hours in an elder meeting talking about what flavor of muffins are we going to sell.

    23:48-23:49

    I don't care.

    23:50-23:54

I want to stay on focus the mission that Jesus Christ gave us.

    23:56-23:57

    Speak Your Word, the Gospel.

    23:58-23:58

    Speak it how?

    24:00-24:01

    Again, verse 29.

    24:02-24:05

"Grant Your servants to continue to speak Your Word with all..." What?

    24:06-24:13

"...with all boldness." "With all boldness." Look at what they prayed for.

    24:13-24:18

You should underline and highlight the word "boldness" in your Bible because I want you to see what they prayed for.

    24:20-24:54

contextualize a little bit. Let's pretend for a second my good friend, elder of the church, bass player, small group leader Jay Naur, let's pretend that he got arrested because he was sharing the gospel. And it became this big thing and it was on the news and he's being publicly berated by all the news stations and there's just you know all these Facebook posts are going out sharing the link about this you know fool talking about Jesus and why didn't and keep his mouth shut, and why doesn't he just mind his own business, and put on trial for it.

    24:56-24:57

    Publicly humiliated.

    24:58-25:01

Comes through the trial, and he shows up back to church.

    25:02-25:09

It's his first day back to church since this huge media mess went down, and all the stuff that put his family through.

    25:10-25:12

    Okay, so Jay's here.

    25:13-25:16

And I say, hey, after service today, we're going to bring Jay up front, we're going to pray for him.

    25:17-25:18

What do you think we'd pray for?

    25:20-26:13

be honest okay don't give me church answer let's just be honest what do you think we'd pray for we'd be tempted to pray for revenge say God you saw how those people treated Jay and I pray that you strike them down you know maybe give them a case of the leprosy some of the more mature of us I didn't say that I didn't say that was me but some of the more mature of us might say we need to pray for justice like this is America and people shouldn't get treated like that in America and we need to pray for justice you know which amendment is it that we're gonna pray for that's the amendment we're gonna pray for First Amendment right First Amendment that's we're gonna pray for justice some of the more mature might want to say you know we need to pray for we need to pray for for the persecution to stop.

    26:14-26:18

Let's pray that these people stop persecuting Christians.

    26:19-26:24

We need to pray that they are going to develop a tolerance for the gospel.

    26:27-26:30

You see in the text, the disciples prayed for none of those things.

    26:31-26:32

    They didn't pray for revenge.

    26:33-26:35

They didn't even pray for justice.

    26:36-26:39

But you have to see, they didn't even pray for the persecution to stop.

    26:40-26:41

    What did they pray for?

    26:41-26:42

    Shout it out.

    26:43-26:44

    Some of you got it.

    26:44-26:45

The rest of you - what did they pray for?

    26:46-26:48

    Boldness. Do you see that?

    26:48-26:49

    It blows my mind.

    26:50-26:51

That's the thing that they prayed for.

    26:52-26:54

Their biggest fear wasn't the persecution.

    26:56-27:02

Their biggest fear was being afraid to preach the Gospel while they were being persecuted.

    27:02-27:03

    Do you see that?

    27:04-27:07

Like this is what we need to pray for because this stuff is going to keep happening.

    27:08-27:09

And it's going to be less popular.

    27:10-27:12

and we're going to be more tempted to not want to share the Gospel.

    27:13-27:14

So do you know what we need to pray for right now?

    27:14-27:18

We need to pray that we're going to be bold when these opportunities come.

    27:19-27:22

That we don't shrink back from sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.

    27:22-27:24

That's what we need to pray for.

    27:26-27:31

Persecution's not going to stop, so the boldness has to come, and it only comes from the Holy Spirit.

    27:32-27:35

That's what we've been talking about all year.

    27:35-27:37

    You will receive power.

    27:38-27:51

will be my witnesses." As we close, see that they also asked the same thing that I pray for often for our church - signs of God at work.

    27:52-27:53

    Look at v. 30.

    27:54-28:08

"While you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus..." They're saying, "God, please, God, and see you at work.

    28:09-28:11

Talk about an immediate answer to prayer.

    28:11-28:12

    Look at verse 31.

    28:13-28:26

"And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and continued to speak the Word of God with boldness." That is a direct answer to prayer.

    28:26-28:35

Verse 29, "they're praying that we may continue to speak the Word with boldness." And then you get down to verse 31.

    28:35-28:36

    It's all the same words.

    28:37-28:39

to speak the Word of God.

    28:41-28:43

They asked for a sign of God at work.

    28:44-28:45

    I prayed that.

    28:46-28:47

    God, I need to know.

    28:48-28:51

I need to know that the message is going out faithfully.

    28:51-28:54

God, I need to know that the Gospel is changing people.

    28:55-29:03

God, I need to know that You are being glorified in what we're trying to do in this church by Your power, by Your grace, according to Your will.

    29:03-29:06

    God, can You show us?

    29:07-29:08

    You're at work.

    29:09-29:28

And as encouraged as they were by their friends, as equipped as they were by the Word of God, as empowered as they were by prayer, I imagine for the disciples on this day, the icing on the cake was this personal verification by God as the place in which they were gathered together was shaken.

    29:29-29:30

    Awesome!

    29:31-29:39

"God, we want to see your hand at work." God just grabs the place where they were and gives it a shake.

    29:39-29:40

    He's like, "Come here.

    29:41-29:42

    "I see what's happening.

    29:43-29:51

"I'm behind what's happening." So I thought, what better way to close this message than by putting the Word of God into practice right now.

    29:52-29:56

I want you to stand with me as the worship team comes forward, and we're going to pray.

    29:58-30:02

that we're going to pray as the disciples prayed.

    30:03-30:08

Father, as we close our time here, we want to put Your Word into practice.

    30:10-30:16

Right now, God, we are just asking, first of all, that You would give us opportunity to share the Word.

    30:18-30:30

Give us eyes to see the people that You are putting into our lives with whom You want us to share the good news of Jesus Christ; that He died for our sins, that He rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    30:32-30:33

    Give us opportunity, Father.

    30:33-30:37

And when that opportunity comes, Father, I pray for boldness.

    30:39-30:45

Father, we never want to come across as obnoxious or know-it-alls or self-righteous.

    30:45-30:47

But we want to come across clearly.

    30:49-30:52

We want to come across with simplicity.

    30:53-30:55

I want to come across with urgency.

    30:57-30:59

    Father, make us bold.

    31:00-31:03

We can't muster up boldness in ourselves, Father.

    31:03-31:06

We can't decide today, I want to be bold.

    31:06-31:07

It has to come from You.

    31:07-31:11

And that's why we're asking You now, Father, to make us bold witnesses.

    31:12-31:13

    Show us, Father.

    31:13-31:15

Give us the words to say when these opportunities arise.

    31:16-31:20

And might we lovingly and graciously share the words.

    31:22-31:27

Father, like the disciples, I just want to unashamedly pray for confirmation.

    31:28-31:33

I thank You for what we have seen in this little church.

    31:34-31:35

    People getting saved.

    31:36-31:37

    People getting baptized.

    31:38-31:51

Just last week, we celebrated with two more people who made the public profession of faith in baptism, announcing that they're identifying with the death and resurrection of Jesus.

    31:52-31:53

Father, I thank You for that confirmation.

    31:54-31:56

And I pray that would continue to happen.

    31:57-32:06

Father, I pray that this church would grow, not because we're trying to be the biggest church in town or it's some kind of a mark of macho-ness.

    32:06-32:10

We want to grow as we see people come to You.

    32:10-32:15

As we see people not only become disciples, but become disciple-makers themselves.

    32:17-32:23

to also increase our capacity and influence in Jesus Christ.

    32:24-32:26

Serve Him, Father, to make His name known.

    32:28-32:43

Father, I pray that You would confirm this by not just people being saved and baptized, but Father, people growing into roles of leadership where they are serving this church and Your kingdom by leading.

    32:46-32:49

Father, I know that You can reach down right now and grab Marshall Middle School and give it a shake.

    32:49-32:50

    I know You can.

    32:54-32:56

God, You've given us much greater signs.

    32:58-33:02

Much greater verification of Your hand at work.

    33:04-33:06

And it's not when you shake a building.

    33:07-33:09

It's when you turn a dead person into an alive person.

    33:10-33:12

    It's when somebody gets saved.

    33:13-33:15

Father, that's what I pray for this church.

    33:17-33:19

It's not going to happen by accident.

    33:19-33:31

It's going to happen as You are proclaiming Your Gospel through Your servants here, boldly.

    33:32-33:33

    Grant us that boldness, Father.

    33:35-33:37

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
