  • 00:41-00:44

Open up your Bibles with me please to 2 Thessalonians.

    00:46-00:47

Father, right now we are turning to your Word.

    00:49-00:54

We believe that faith comes by hearing, hearing through the Word of Christ.

    00:56-01:01

We believe that your Word does not return to you void, it always accomplishes the purposes for which you send it out.

    01:03-01:06

Father, we believe that the Gospel is the power of God.

    01:07-01:10

So Father, let us be faithful to Your Word today.

    01:11-01:15

And we know that You're going to be at work.

    01:17-01:19

We ask You these things, Father.

    01:19-01:23

We praise You today, in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

    01:24-01:40

And all of God's people said, "Amen." You know, I'm just going to be honest with you here, because having a job where I have to, Every week I have to get up and speak to a group of people, right?

    01:40-01:48

And we have people of all different kinds of backgrounds, and from different generations, and things like that.

    01:48-01:53

So I try, I try to keep up with the latest slang.

    01:56-02:00

And Justin, you were my go-to for years, but now you're a father of three.

    02:00-02:05

I'm not sure how hip you really are to the newest slang.

    02:05-02:07

"Okay, Justin says sorta, way much more than me.

    02:07-02:09

"I'm not criticizing you, brother, I'm just saying.

    02:10-02:24

"I understand you get to a certain point "that you start to lose track of the trends "because you're taking care of your little flock, right?" So here's my problem though, with like the latest slang and terminology.

    02:25-02:25

    Here's my problem.

    02:26-02:41

By the time I hear the word and learn what it means incorporate it into a sentence so that the young ones will think I'm cool, it's outdated.

    02:42-02:43

    Anybody else?

    02:44-02:45

Does that happen to anybody else?

    02:46-03:02

I think I'm trying to impress the young people and I throw out some word and they're looking at me like, "Dude, that was like 2014." Like, "Oh." So in preparation for this, I actually looked some words up.

    03:03-03:09

The other thing is I'm always afraid I'm gonna say something that has like a really like inappropriate meaning and I didn't know that.

    03:10-03:16

So I looked these up and as far as I know, these ones are safe according to the websites that were telling us the latest terminology.

    03:17-03:24

But for us, for those of us trying to stay relevant, here's some new slang words.

    03:28-03:30

One I heard about this past week was the word drip.

    03:31-03:32

How many people have heard drip?

    03:33-03:34

I don't mean like out of the faucet, drip.

    03:34-03:35

    And what does drip mean?

    03:37-03:38

Shout it out if you know.

    03:41-03:42

    I haven't known.

    03:42-03:44

    It's having cool clothes, right?

    03:45-03:45

    It's having style.

    03:46-03:47

    Now here's the thing I don't know.

    03:47-03:53

Like a pastor friend was telling me about that because the kids in the youth group were using it, and I'm like, "So how do you use that?

    03:54-03:55

    Like you're covered in drip?

    03:57-04:00

You're really dripping?" It's like, "Oh, sorry."

    04:00-04:01

    (congregation laughing)

    04:01-04:03

All right, I don't know how to use it, right?

    04:04-04:06

Apparently Evan can tell me later, all right?

    04:07-04:09

Here's another one that I just learned.

    04:09-04:12

This first time I just read this this week.

    04:13-04:15

Situationship, how many people have heard of a situationship?

    04:18-04:19

    Exactly one of you.

    04:20-04:29

All right, Sierra, what I read was a situationship is a relationship where you're more than friends, but you're not yet a couple.

    04:29-04:30

    Is that right, Sierra?

    04:30-04:32

Okay, all right, you're more than friends, but you're not a couple.

    04:33-04:38

    There's like, I guess there's this gray zone where you're neither, that's a situationship.

    04:39-04:41

But here's a word that really resonated with me this week.

    04:42-04:43

    It's the word chugi.

    04:43-04:44

I think I'm pronouncing it right.

    04:45-04:46

    C-H-E-U-G-Y.

    04:46-04:47

How many have heard of chugi?

    04:49-04:50

    Just a couple of you?

    04:51-04:52

    Okay, Dana, thank you.

    04:54-04:58

I need to find out where you heard it, because I just, what's that, your daughter?

    04:59-05:02

Okay, well, here's what I learned about Chugi.

    05:02-05:03

And again, this resonated with me.

    05:03-05:08

Chugi means out of date or trying too hard to stay relevant.

    05:10-05:12

And I'm like, I feel that.

    05:14-05:15

    Chugi.

    05:17-05:24

And those of you that don't understand, maybe from the older generations, maybe we could say it's, you're trying to be hip.

    05:25-05:26

    Remember hip?

    05:27-05:29

You're trying to be hip, but you're actually a square.

    05:33-05:36

Feel so old now, but here's one.

    05:37-05:40

Actually, Brooke taught me this one.

    05:42-05:43

    It's FOMO.

    05:44-05:45

How many of you have heard of FOMO?

    05:46-05:52

Okay, Brooke taught me this one like a few months ago when she was working here, so it's surely out of date by now.

    05:52-05:54

    But FOMO is an acronym.

    05:55-05:57

It stands for a fear of missing out.

    05:59-06:02

And this term has become popularized thanks to social media.

    06:03-06:12

You get on your newsfeed and you see all your friends are exotic places doing fun things and you're sitting at home eating Cheetos or whatever.

    06:13-06:24

And you're like, man, I feel like there's stuff going on out there that I'm not a part of and I have this fear that I am missing out.

    06:25-06:26

    That's FOMO.

    06:27-06:29

You're like, "Are you gonna get to a sermon?" I'm getting there.

    06:31-06:40

Because you see, 2 Thessalonians was written because you could say in a sense that the Thessalonian church had a really bad case of FOMO.

    06:42-06:49

They thought that the rapture had happened and the day of the Lord had arrived and they completely missed it.

    06:52-07:01

Because there were some false teachers They were telling them, "Hey, you are living in the day of the Lord." That's God's judgment on earth.

    07:01-07:02

We're going to talk about that.

    07:03-07:10

And the reason we're going through 2 Thessalonians as a church is because we see the same types of things in churches today.

    07:13-07:27

When it comes to end times and talks of what happens at the end of the age, Christians believe all kinds of strange and goofy and bizarre things that just aren't biblical.

    07:30-07:33

And some would say, "Well look, Jeff, does it really matter?

    07:33-07:34

    I mean, does it matter?

    07:35-07:35

    Does it matter?

    07:36-07:38

I mean, we got the gospel down, right?

    07:38-07:51

Does the end time stuff really matter?" And I would say to you, absolutely it does, because hope is what motivates you to persevere in your walk with Christ.

    07:52-07:57

And if you don't know what you're hoping for, what's motivating you to hang in there?

    07:59-08:03

But sadly, a lot of Christians, you're like, "What happens at the end of the age?" It's like, "Well, I've never read Revelation.

    08:04-08:05

    "I'm not gonna read it.

    08:06-08:24

"I think I'd die at some point "and go to heaven or something, "and we don't really know what's going to happen." But now, you see, and I've shared this with you before, I'm seeing more of an interest in end times things than I ever have in my entire ministry.

    08:26-08:29

Because of all the stuff that is happening today.

    08:30-08:31

    Have you been paying attention?

    08:34-08:37

Some of you may be asking, "We know, Jeffrey, we're in the tribulation now.

    08:40-08:42

And if we are, what's going to happen to me?

    08:43-09:00

What's going to happen to my family?" Well, some good news as we get to 2 Thessalonians 2, on your outline, the heading is "When things are bad and you're starting to freak out." When things are bad and you're starting to freak out, here's a word of encouragement.

    09:01-09:17

If you sort of, excuse me, share the sentiment that Laura was sharing on the video, but for real, that you're like, "I'm starting to freak out, I see what's happening, and I look at the Bible and what do we do when things are bad and you're starting to freak out?

    09:17-09:18

Number one, write this down, don't be alarmed.

    09:19-09:21

We're going to start here, don't be alarmed.

    09:22-09:27

Look at what chapter 2, we're looking at the first two verses.

    09:28-09:52

Paul says, "Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed either by a spirit or a spoken word or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come." Stop there.

    09:52-09:54

    He talks about being gathered.

    09:55-09:57

He's talking about the rapture, right?

    09:57-10:09

Now this is 2 Thessalonians and the letter he wrote them previously was called, okay, 1 Thessalonians, thank you Bible college students, just seeing who's still with me here.

    10:10-10:15

But back in 1 Thessalonians 4, he taught them all about the rapture, right?

    10:18-10:19

    What is the rapture?

    10:20-10:24

We've talked about this in the past time, we're going to run through it again.

    10:24-10:25

    What is the rapture?

    10:27-10:58

for some and some of you who may be just started joining us recently this is gonna be some new information we're gonna get through it quickly what is the rapture the rapture is the future event when Jesus Christ descends from heaven to gather his people those who died and those living to be caught up together to meet the Lord in the air to receive their glorified bodies and to be kept From the day of the Lord.

    10:58-11:03

You're like, "Wait, what's the day of the Lord?" Because I know he said that here in verse 2.

    11:03-11:04

What's the day of the Lord?

    11:05-11:11

Well, the phrase is used four times in the New Testament, and used about 19 times in the Old Testament.

    11:12-11:17

It's a time of God's vengeance and God's judgment on unbelievers.

    11:19-11:24

It's the section of your Bible from Revelation 6 to Revelation 19.

    11:25-11:28

period of time is called the day of the Lord.

    11:31-11:36

It's a seven year period that's also known as the tribulation.

    11:38-11:46

I believe that Jesus Christ will remove the church that saved before the tribulation.

    11:46-11:48

That view is called a pre-tribulation rapture.

    11:49-11:57

And I know that's not the cool theology nowadays, but I'm going to defend that quickly.

    11:57-12:00

    Why I believe in a pre-tribulation rapture.

    12:01-12:07

Why I believe in a pre-tribulation rapture, letter A, it's the most straightforward understanding of the Bible.

    12:10-12:27

Revelation 3.10, Jesus says, "I will keep you from the hour of trouble that is coming upon the whole earth." There's never been a tribulation over the entire earth, but Jesus said there's one coming, and He's going to literally keep you away from that.

    12:28-12:29

    A global event.

    12:30-12:33

And you read John 14, verses 1-4.

    12:33-12:36

    1 Corinthians 15, verses 51-54.

    12:36-12:39

    1 Thessalonians 4.13-5.11.

    12:39-12:41

Those are just some of the passages.

    12:41-12:47

When you read them straightforwardly, it seems that Jesus comes to remove His church before the tribulation.

    12:47-12:49

It's a straightforward understanding of the texts.

    12:50-12:55

Second reason I believe in a pre-tribulation rapture is this, we never see the church in the tribulation in Revelation.

    12:57-12:59

In Revelation, it's interesting, we went through it.

    13:01-13:04

And you get the first three chapters, right?

    13:04-13:18

It's the church, the church, the church, the church, the church, the church, here to the church, here to the church, there to the church, here to My question is, where is the church during the tribulation?

    13:20-13:21

    It's not mentioned at all.

    13:21-13:25

Not a comment, not the word, it's just not mentioned at all.

    13:28-13:34

During the tribulation, and the book starts with so much about the church, why isn't it mentioned in the tribulation?

    13:34-13:36

I believe it's because the church isn't here.

    13:39-13:42

And then I'll let her see, why do I believe in a pre-tribulation rapture?

    13:43-13:49

"Before God brings judgment on unbelievers, He removes His people first." That's the objection I always hear.

    13:49-13:59

"Why do you think Christians should be spared from suffering?" "Why do you think we're spared? Why do you think we're exempt from suffering?" I hear that objection all the time when it comes to the pre-tribulation rapture.

    14:00-14:06

Like, first of all, nobody's saying anybody's exempt from suffering in general, because we all got our share, right?

    14:06-14:08

    Anybody have a suffering-free life?

    14:08-14:09

Want to stand up, give testimony?

    14:10-14:11

We're all suffering with something, right?

    14:12-14:28

But when it comes to this, all through the Bible, all through the Bible, when God is going to judge unbelievers, the first thing He does is get His people out of there first, right?

    14:29-14:34

Remember Noah's flood? God said, "I'm going to flood the whole earth." It was God's flood, not Noah's, but you know what I mean, right?

    14:35-14:38

Don't be that person. But God was going to flood the whole earth.

    14:39-14:40

And what was the first thing He did?

    14:42-14:44

Noah built a boat and animals and family.

    14:45-14:49

That was the first thing he did, separate his people from those he's judging.

    14:49-14:52

Remember when God was going to wipe Sodom and Gomorrah off the map?

    14:52-14:53

What was the first thing he did?

    14:54-14:54

    Lot.

    14:55-14:56

    Get out of there, right?

    14:56-15:00

What about Israel in Egypt during the plagues?

    15:01-15:03

    Somehow Israel was unaffected.

    15:03-15:06

Israel was separated from the judgment that God was bringing on unbelievers.

    15:06-15:12

What about the Israelites in the wilderness, like the rebellion of Korah and other events in the wilderness.

    15:12-15:21

God always seems to separate His people from unbelievers when He brings judgment.

    15:23-15:27

So if we're going to have a global tribulation, what's God going to do?

    15:27-15:31

He's going to start by taking His people off of the earth.

    15:32-15:33

So, back to the passage here.

    15:34-15:55

Someone was obviously feeding them lies, And the church thought they somehow missed a rapture, they were in the day of the Lord, and somebody was convincing them, "Hey, you're experiencing the judgment of God, "and it's about to get a lot worse "because God is laying the hammer down." And the church was obviously very upset about this, like, "What are we gonna do?

    15:55-16:04

"We're gonna be right in the middle "of the vengeance of the Lord." And Paul starts out here by saying, "Don't panic, all right?

    16:04-16:05

    "Don't be alarmed.

    16:06-16:08

Ignore any information that you're hearing.

    16:08-16:12

To the contrary, you are not in the day of the Lord.

    16:16-16:19

Again, too many Christians are getting their information from bad sources.

    16:20-16:23

They don't know what to believe, and the result is they're living in fear.

    16:23-16:25

    I'm starting to freak out!

    16:28-16:30

You know, like this whole COVID thing, right?

    16:31-16:33

We're so sick of hearing about it and talking about it.

    16:33-16:35

You realize this is global, right?

    16:35-16:35

    You realize that.

    16:37-16:44

And as much as people want to make it like an American political thing, this is happening all over the planet right now.

    16:46-16:51

But what we are seeing, not just in our country, but in other countries, government overreach.

    16:52-16:59

We're seeing violence in cities, and then all the worries about what about mandated vaccines and losing jobs and not able to travel?

    16:59-17:01

What about all the supply shortages?

    17:02-17:07

Do you know how many times I've been asked over the past couple years, "Is this the mark of the beast?

    17:07-17:13

Is that the mark of the beast?" And I would say, "Church, this is why we theology, right?

    17:16-17:34

This is why we go line by line through the Bible." And some might think, "Well, some of this stuff is boring." And that's why we're in the situation that we're in, because we don't really understand what the Bible says.

    17:36-17:37

    So get the facts.

    17:38-17:40

First of all, he says, "Don't be alarmed.

    17:40-17:43

Calm down." Paul is talking them off the ledge.

    17:43-17:48

"Hey, calm down." Secondly, he says, "Don't be deceived." Don't be deceived.

    17:48-17:49

    Look at verse 3.

    17:51-17:54

He says, "Let no one deceive you in any way.

    17:57-18:10

So that day will not come, the day of the Lord he's talking about, that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction." Stop there.

    18:10-18:11

    The son of destruction.

    18:12-18:13

    He says, "Don't be deceived.

    18:13-18:14

    It's unmistakable.

    18:15-18:23

The day of the Lord has a definite beginning." You're like, "Well, how do we know when the day of the Lord begins?" He tells us right here.

    18:24-18:29

It's when the man of lawlessness, the Antichrist, has been revealed.

    18:33-18:35

    He ushers in the rebellion.

    18:36-18:40

You're like, "Well, I'm seeing rebellion all the time." Well, not like rebellion in some generic sense.

    18:41-18:43

He's talking about something specific here.

    18:43-18:49

The rebellion, a specific rebellion, something that's not revealed until the Antichrist comes on the scene.

    18:49-18:53

and he's going to talk about it here in just a few minutes, so hang on.

    18:54-18:57

Like, wait, wait, wait, who's the Antichrist? Who's that?

    18:57-18:59

Who is this man of lawlessness?

    19:01-19:07

Well, we read quite a bit about him in the Old Testament, like in Ezekiel and Daniel and Zechariah.

    19:08-19:19

1 John tells us that there are many Antichrists in the world, But ultimately, there is one final, ultimate Antichrist that's coming.

    19:21-19:33

Daniel calls him "the little horn." Revelation refers to him as "the beast." Jesus Christ called him "the abomination of desolation." The Bible says he's going to rule the world.

    19:34-19:37

And he's going to make a peace treaty with Israel.

    19:39-19:53

And then halfway through the seven-year tribulation, He's going to break his treaty with Israel, and he's going to make himself the focus of all religious worship.

    19:54-20:01

And the last three and a half years is going to be horrifically violent.

    20:04-20:11

But Paul's whole point here is, "Look, church, we know we're not in the day of the Lord, Because the Antichrist hasn't yet been revealed.

    20:13-20:19

And he comes into power after believers are taken away, after we are gathered together with Jesus.

    20:22-20:50

So the final thing here, when things are bad and you're starting to freak out, he says, "Don't be alarmed, don't be deceived." But he says, "Don't be forgetful." Because the Antichrist kicks off the day of the Lord, Paul says, "Let me remind you who He is, so that you will take note that He's not here yet." I mean, He might be here physically on the earth, but He hasn't been revealed yet.

    20:51-20:55

And when you recognize that, you recognize this, you didn't miss the rapture.

    20:56-20:56

    All right?

    20:58-21:01

So, five things you need to know about the Antichrist.

    21:03-21:15

Paul gives us a really short but really comprehensive reminder of what this ultimate man of lawlessness looks like.

    21:15-21:17

Five things you need to know about the Antichrist.

    21:17-21:19

    Letter A, he's blasphemous.

    21:20-21:21

    He's blasphemous.

    21:22-21:35

Verse 4, he says, "Who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.

    21:36-21:38

    First of all, he's blasphemous.

    21:38-21:43

He's going to set himself up in the temple and proclaim to be God.

    21:44-21:45

You know, Jesus taught the same thing.

    21:46-21:59

Matthew 24, verses 15 and 16, Jesus said, "So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel standing in the holy place," he's talking about the temple.

    22:00-22:02

And you're like, "Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hang on.

    22:03-22:24

Question. What temple?" You're like, "I don't know if you realize this, Pastor Jeff, because apparently you're still working on Chugi, but you realize the Jews don't have a temple right now." But you know, the plans have been made for the temple, you know that.

    22:25-22:30

And many of the furnishings and apparel have already been made for that.

    22:30-22:32

You know that's happening right now.

    22:35-22:41

And you're like, "Well, if they're making the clothes and the furnishings, what are they waiting for?" I'll tell you what they're waiting for.

    22:42-22:43

    You see, God has plans.

    22:45-22:47

And nothing is going to happen until God allows it.

    22:49-22:52

You know how quickly the temple can be put up?

    22:54-23:21

You drive through Cranberry, you drive by one day, it's a farm, you drive by two days later, there's an entire housing complex there. And how many times do I say, "Where did that all come from?" The plans are there. And a lot of the furnishings have been made. But it's not going to happen until God allows it. And that's where the Antichrist is going to ultimately perform the ultimate blasphemy, right?

    23:23-23:30

Letter B, speaking of things according to God's timing, Letter B, he's restrained until God allows them to be revealed.

    23:32-23:34

He's restrained until God allows them to be revealed.

    23:35-23:40

Verse 5 says, "Do you not remember that when I was with you, I told you these things?" Paul's like, "Hey, this is a review.

    23:40-23:41

I told you this stuff, guys.

    23:43-24:17

Just giving you a quick review here." Verse 6, he says, "And you know what is restraining him now, so that he may be revealed in his time, for the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way." Stop there. The day of the Lord cannot come until the Antichrist is revealed, but the Antichrist can't be revealed until what is restraining him is taken out of the way.

    24:19-24:20

    Do you get that?

    24:21-24:35

He says something or someone is stopping the Antichrist from being revealed, and that day is going to come that that restraining influence is gone, and then he'll be revealed.

    24:37-24:39

And I know what you're thinking.

    24:40-24:42

    What is the restraining power?

    24:43-24:46

What is it that is restraining him?

    24:47-24:48

    Anybody else have that question?

    24:48-24:59

Well, you know I did a lot of reading this week, and I read about 70 different theologians, and I found about 92 different opinions on it.

    25:00-25:02

    What is this restraining force?

    25:03-25:04

I'm not going to bore you with my homework.

    25:08-25:10

And you're like, "Well, what does the text say, right?

    25:10-25:10

    Isn't that what we do?

    25:10-25:22

We go to the text?" Well, verse 6, Paul says, "You know what is restraining him." "Oh, Paul, I wasn't there when you taught that in Thessalonica 2,000 years ago." "No, I don't know.

    25:23-25:26

He just tells the church, 'You know.'" We've already talked about this.

    25:29-25:44

But if we really stop and think about it, every real Christian knows the real power that is sovereignly orchestrating world events, leading to the end.

    25:45-25:48

Do you know who's really in charge? Do you know?

    25:50-25:52

I mean, who's really in charge?

    25:54-26:01

If you don't know who's really in charge, I will resign right now, because I have completely failed you.

    26:02-26:04

Who's really in charge? Shout it out.

    26:04-26:06

    God is in charge, right?

    26:06-26:13

He is in charge of every single detail, and every second, and every molecule in the universe.

    26:13-26:14

    God is in charge.

    26:16-26:19

Specifically here, He's talking about the Holy Spirit.

    26:21-26:21

Now think about that with me.

    26:22-26:29

The Holy Spirit, that's one of the things that He does, is He restrains sin.

    26:30-26:31

Like, well, how does He do that?

    26:32-26:35

Well, if you're a Christian, you know exactly what that means.

    26:36-26:42

Galatians 5.17 tells us that the Spirit prevents you from doing what you wish in the flesh.

    26:43-26:49

Can anybody give testimony that your flesh wanted to sin and the Holy Spirit said, "No, we are not going to do that.

    26:49-26:51

That is not who we are.

    26:51-26:53

That does not honor our Lord." So you're like, "You know what?

    26:53-26:55

I'm not doing that." Have you ever had that experience?

    26:56-27:01

If you haven't, you've got problems.

    27:05-27:10

Just as the Spirit restrains evil in Christians, He restrains evil in the world.

    27:11-27:26

Jesus said in Matthew 5.13, "You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored?" You see, God's presence on earth is in and through His people, and that makes us salt.

    27:26-27:32

And because we're here as salt, just like salt on food, we preserve from decay and corruption.

    27:34-27:42

Someday the salt's going to be removed when we're gathered, when we're raptured, and on that day the Holy Spirit is going to let evil do all that it wants to do.

    27:44-27:45

    That's the tribulation.

    27:47-27:48

You think things are bad now.

    27:49-27:50

You think things are wicked now.

    27:50-27:54

You think people are perverse and rebellious?

    27:56-27:59

This is kindergarten compared to what's coming.

    28:01-28:10

Now this doesn't mean that the Holy Spirit is going to be gone from the earth, because during the tribulation, many people are going to come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

    28:13-28:20

He just simply says the Holy Spirit is going to stop His restraining work to reveal the Antichrist.

    28:23-28:26

Interestingly, verse 7, he makes a very interesting statement.

    28:26-28:39

Look at it again. He says, "For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work." This could be a whole other sermon, and maybe someday, not today.

    28:41-28:43

But the mystery of lawlessness is already at work.

    28:46-28:47

We see it right in front of us.

    28:47-28:50

The mystery of lawlessness, we watch it right in front of us.

    28:50-28:56

Because you realize as human beings, as a race, we are literally hell-bent on destroying ourselves with sin.

    29:00-29:03

We insist on doing the very things that destroy us.

    29:05-29:10

And as bad as things are now, the only reason they aren't worse is because the Holy Spirit is restraining it.

    29:12-29:18

in His people and globally through His people that He indwells.

    29:19-29:21

But he's restrained until God allows him to be revealed.

    29:21-29:23

Let her see, he will be destroyed.

    29:24-29:25

    Look at verse 8.

    29:27-29:34

It says, "And then the lawless one will be revealed." Okay, after the restraining is gone, the lawless one will be revealed.

    29:36-29:57

"Whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of His mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of His coming." I kind of laugh, you know, I'm studying and reading this and rereading this and rereading this and Paul's like, he's like, "And then at that point, the antichrist is revealed." Fast forward, here's how he's destroyed.

    29:58-30:00

Like he just jumps right to that.

    30:00-30:05

Like he's so excited on the day that Jesus Christ comes to take care of business.

    30:06-30:07

    He's talking about Revelation 19.

    30:11-30:13

Spoiler alert if you haven't read that.

    30:14-30:15

It doesn't end well for the Antichrist.

    30:17-30:25

Revelation 19 talks about what we call the battle of Armageddon, but it's not really a battle because battle implies two sides fighting.

    30:27-30:29

And that's not exactly what happens.

    30:29-30:39

If you read it, Jesus shows up and everyone who's rejected Him, He just destroys them.

    30:42-30:47

Letter D, Paul's going to now kind of take us back.

    30:47-30:53

Ultimately, he's destroyed, but we're going to jump back here and I'm going to tell you a little bit about him before his ultimate encounter with Jesus Christ.

    30:54-30:57

    Verse 9, he is Satan-powered.

    30:59-31:09

He says, "The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan, with all power and false signs and wonders." He's Satan-powered.

    31:11-31:13

See with the Antichrist, you have to think of it this way.

    31:13-31:19

God the Father has His Son, Jesus Christ.

    31:20-31:29

And the Antichrist is going to be, in a sense, like Satan's man in the way that Jesus is God's man.

    31:32-31:36

It's the most wicked blasphemy you can think of.

    31:37-31:47

Satan's like, "Oh, you have the One who does miracles, who died and resurrected and the world worshiped?" Satan goes, "Oh, I got one of those too.

    31:48-31:50

    This is mine." It's sick.

    31:53-31:54

    It's sick.

    31:56-31:58

His origin is Satan, His power is satanic.

    32:01-32:02

    He performs signs and wonders.

    32:03-32:04

    Again, He has a resurrection.

    32:04-32:06

We talked about that in Revelation.

    32:07-32:09

Like a literal one, does He fake it?

    32:11-32:16

I don't know, but it's the means by which He deceives the world into worshiping Him.

    32:17-32:18

    Such a twisted copy.

    32:20-32:22

God the Father and God the Son.

    32:24-32:25

    And finally, he is deceptive.

    32:27-32:28

    He is deceptive.

    32:31-32:32

Look at the last three verses.

    32:34-33:26

He says, "With all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refuse to love the truth, and so be saved." what it says there. It doesn't say they didn't know the truth. What does it say? They refused to love it. That's the problem. Like they had it. They just refused it. And like his "dad", Satan, the Antichrist is a deceiver. And it is so easy to deceive people who don't want the truth. They will believe anything. What about God? Where does He fit into this?

    33:26-34:12

Verse 11 says, "Therefore God sends them a strong delusion so that they may believe what is false." If that verse doesn't chill you to the bone, I don't know what will. This is an aspect of God's judgment. We see it in Romans 1. When you exchange the truth of God for a lie. Romans 1 says, "God gave them over." God's like, "Okay, you don't want the truth, you want a lie? Have it. Do it your way." Then verse 12, finally, he says, "In order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness." Like who are the people who are condemned?

    34:14-34:43

who did not believe the truth, and instead, pleasure and unrighteousness. We talked about this last week with hell, didn't we? God ultimately is going to give you what you want. God says you want sin? You can have it. Here you go. Have as much as you want. If you refuse the truth, you know, God's not going to force it on you.

    34:43-34:46

You know, God's never dragged anyone to heaven kicking and screaming.

    34:49-35:00

God says, "You want sin, you want falsehood, you want to live according to your own lust of the flesh and your own way and your own selfish, idiotic, self-centered existence.

    35:00-35:00

    Fine.

    35:01-35:02

    Have it.

    35:03-35:34

You can have that whole package deal, but I got to tell you, with the package deal comes condemnation. So Paul is underscoring here, "Hey, the day of the Lord has not yet come." So I want to say to you, church, if there are any of you that have been caught up, maybe turn CNN off for a little bit? Huh? Go outside, get some sunshine?

    35:37-35:41

Those of us who know Jesus Christ, listen, you do not have a thing to worry about.

    35:43-36:15

Not a thing to worry about. But when we read these last few verses, I have to also remind you, if you don't know Jesus Christ, you have everything to worry about. The good news is today's the day of grace. And if you don't know Jesus Christ I want to ask you just one question as I close as the worship team comes up. If you don't know Christ I just want to ask you one question today. What What are you waiting for?

    36:17-36:18

    I mean really.

    36:21-36:22

What is it that you're waiting for?

    36:25-36:29

Because one of the, you know, we talked about Satan's lies and deception and the Antichrist with the deception.

    36:29-36:31

You know one of Satan's biggest lies?

    36:33-36:34

    It's this one.

    36:36-36:37

    You always have time.

    36:38-36:39

That's one of his biggest lies.

    36:39-36:40

    You always have time.

    36:41-36:49

You don't want to give your life to Jesus today because you still got some stuff going on in your life that you're not quite ready to turn from.

    36:50-36:52

Satan would want you to know you got lots of time.

    36:54-36:55

You can worry about that next week.

    36:56-36:58

"Yeah, put that off till the month...

    36:58-37:02

Why don't you just wait till summer and then things will change.

    37:03-38:50

That'll be a good time to get serious about your walk with God, but right now is just not really a good time. That's the lie of the devil. Here's the truth. Right now, right this very minute, this very well could be your last opportunity. So I'm pleading with with you. It's not too late now. God loves you. Jesus Christ came to die for your sins and to spare you, to save you from this wrath that is to come. And I want you to bow your head with me because now is the time to walk away from your sin and come to Jesus Christ. I just want to lead you in a prayer and if this is a decision that you need to make or you are making today I want you to come and see me. What are waiting for. This might be your last opportunity. The Father in heaven, we bow ourselves before you. And your word says so much about the end of this age and about the man of lawlessness and in this section we just get like this really fast cliff's nose version. But it's It's enough to horrify us when we try to wrap our brains around the wickedness that's coming.

    38:53-38:55

So Father, to that end, I want to lift up those who don't know you.

    38:55-39:09

If there's somebody here, whether they're sitting here or watching this at home or watching the stream later or listening to the podcast later, whatever, I pray that you would bring them to the end of themselves.

    39:11-39:14

You bring that person to say, "My sin has gotten me nowhere.

    39:15-39:19

I have made my life miserable by choosing to do things my way.

    39:20-39:22

    I have ignored God.

    39:22-39:26

I have done everything I could to shut Him out.

    39:27-39:51

And I realize today that God loves me with an infinite love and He demonstrated that by punishing Jesus Christ for the sins that I committed." Father, I pray that you would help that person understand that it is through believing in Jesus Christ, receiving Him, that their sins are washed away.

    39:53-40:06

That they would pray, "I believe that Jesus died for me, and I believe that through receiving I become a child of God because that's what Your Word says.

    40:09-40:21

Father, I pray that that person would reach out, whether it's to me or one of our elders, a small group leader, anybody they know that knows the Lord and knows Your Word.

    40:22-40:24

Father, we believe the time is near.

    40:26-40:30

But at the same time, Father, we rejoice because this passage was meant to give us comfort.

    40:33-40:41

Father, I confess to you, there have been times over the last couple of years I try to get caught up in the news and I get freaked out a little bit.

    40:43-40:45

"What's going to happen to my kids? What's going to happen to me?

    40:45-40:54

What's going to happen to the church?" But we're reminded not to be alarmed or deceived or forget what your Word says.

    40:57-40:58

You're going to take care of us.

    41:01-41:09

Thank you for that reassurance from your Word today. We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Introduction:

2 Timothy 3:1-5 - But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.

Second Thessalonians. Open your Bibles there, please.

    00:47-01:35

When I was in college, I made this friend. His name was Nate. And I remember one day Nate was like, "Hey, you want to go play tennis?" And when I was in my 20s, I was pretty good at tennis. And the older I get, the better I was. But I was pretty good at tennis. So I'm really looking forward to playing Nate. He goes, I'm like yeah I'd love to play tennis. He goes, all right I'll pick, he goes I'll pick you up at four. So there I am in my apartment waiting for him to pick me up. I've got my tennis racket, all ready to play some tennis, got my tennis shoes on and I am ready to go and four o'clock he's gonna be here and 430 he's just running a a little bit late, five o'clock.

    01:37-01:42

He's running a lot late and 5.30, he's probably not coming.

    01:44-01:49

And the next day I saw him at school, I saw him on campus and I said, I thought we were supposed to play tennis yesterday.

    01:50-01:51

He goes, oh yeah, you know what?

    01:51-01:54

I ran into Shane and Jason and they wanna see the movie.

    01:54-01:56

So we went up to the cheap theaters and saw a movie.

    01:57-02:02

And then I used that tennis racket in a way it was not intended.

    02:02-02:04

And that's how I got thrown out of Bible college.

    02:04-02:06

But that last part's not true.

    02:08-02:09

But have you ever been stood up?

    02:09-02:11

Maybe you don't want to raise your hand.

    02:13-02:15

Especially not this close to Valentine's Day, but have you ever been stood up?

    02:18-02:21

    That's like a sick feeling, isn't it?

    02:21-02:21

    Like, oh.

    02:25-02:30

And you know, I think a lot of the church feels like Jesus stood us up.

    02:32-02:45

We just spent all that time in the Gospel of John, and we saw all this, "I'm coming back, I'm coming back, I'm coming back, I'm coming back." And I think a lot of people in the church have sort of thrown their arms up, like me standing there with my tennis racket.

    02:46-02:47

    I thought He was coming.

    02:51-02:53

We're going to be spending the next five weeks talking about that.

    02:54-02:56

And I feel like I need to start with this.

    02:56-02:58

Jesus Christ said He's coming back.

    02:59-03:03

    Therefore, He is coming back.

    03:04-03:04

    All right?

    03:07-03:17

So we don't know when, but He said that there are going to be signs when the time is near.

    03:18-03:21

And these signs are literally, literally everywhere.

    03:23-03:24

    You're like, "What signs?

    03:24-03:29

Oh, I could spend a whole lot of time on this." I'm just going to give you three categories of signs, all right?

    03:29-03:32

Like what signs are there that Jesus is coming soon?

    03:33-03:35

I'm going to give you three categories, jot these down.

    03:35-03:36

    The first, Israel.

    03:36-03:37

    Just write Israel.

    03:38-03:38

    Keep your eye on Israel.

    03:38-03:43

Israel was reborn as a nation, so to speak, in 1948.

    03:43-03:50

All the plans to rebuild the temple, all of the constant hostility towards the Jewish nation, all the constant fighting.

    03:51-03:52

Just keep your eye on what's happening in Israel.

    03:54-03:56

So many signs associated with Israel.

    03:56-03:58

    God's not done with Israel.

    04:00-04:08

Second category of signs that say Jesus is coming soon are the very things that Laura was talking about on the video.

    04:09-04:10

    Matthew 24.

    04:11-04:12

    Have you noticed?

    04:12-04:19

Wars, rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes.

    04:19-04:22

    Jesus talked about lawlessness.

    04:23-04:23

    Have you noticed?

    04:25-04:27

    Persecution of God's people.

    04:29-04:30

    Global events.

    04:30-04:32

So there's Israel, that's the first category.

    04:32-04:37

Second category, I'm just calling that global events, Matthew 24 stuff.

    04:37-04:44

The third category, very explicit and very obvious, I just called it people corruption.

    04:46-04:58

The closer we get to Jesus' return, the more difficult the world becomes and the more godless the world becomes. Like where did you get this? Just very, very quickly. 2 Timothy 3.

    05:01-05:16

It's going to be on the screen for you. It says, look at this, "But understand this, that in the last days," ding, ding, ding, "there will come times of difficulty." Why?

    05:16-05:37

Why is it going to be so hard? Look at this, "For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control.

    05:38-05:40

I should do a sermon series on that sometime.

    05:41-05:44

Brutal, not loving good, excuse me.

    05:45-05:48

    Treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit.

    05:49-06:21

of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness but denying its power. Avoid such people." Then you go over to chapter 4, same book, it talks about people being devoted to deceitful spirits. Does it seem to you, ladies and gentlemen, that the world is devoted to deception right now? Like there's an obvious lie being propagated and And the world's just like, "No, I believe that." And all of the people corruption.

    06:21-06:22

    Are you seeing these signs?

    06:22-06:23

    Are you seeing them?

    06:24-06:25

Do I have to sell you on this?

    06:26-06:27

    Do you have a TV?

    06:29-06:30

    Do you even have internet?

    06:30-06:34

These things are so obvious when your eyes are open.

    06:37-06:39

    Jesus is coming any second.

    06:41-06:46

And you're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, how do we live now, knowing that Jesus is coming any second.

    06:46-06:47

    How do we do that?

    06:49-06:52

Second Thessalonians tells us exactly how to do that.

    06:55-06:59

This was a church that was established in about 49 AD-ish.

    06:59-07:03

Paul was on his second missionary journey with Silas.

    07:04-07:07

You can read all about it, Acts 17, not now, maybe later.

    07:07-07:17

He wrote this letter to the Thessalonians shortly after he wrote the first letter.

    07:17-07:19

And do you know what that book is called?

    07:21-07:24

Okay, just so you're still with me, 1 Thessalonians, right on.

    07:26-07:32

And apparently it was reported to Paul that persecution was ramping up.

    07:33-07:50

And the church, though enduring, was confused/misled about the details of the return of Jesus Christ. That's why we have 2 Thessalonians.

    07:51-07:59

So first up, in the book, we go where the text goes, but the first thing that Paul addresses is their suffering.

    08:01-08:05

So this is a sermon about suffering.

    08:06-08:08

    And you're like, "Yay!

    08:10-08:21

I was wanting something that would make me feel good." No, this is a sermon about suffering, and right now I know there are people that are thinking, "Uh, yeah, can we get that guy we had last week?

    08:24-08:29

Because I felt a lot better after that message." Debbie Downer.

    08:30-08:32

Now hang on, I would say, hold on a second.

    08:33-08:38

This sermon is about suffering, but this is all good news.

    08:39-08:45

That's why on your outline, I got some great news about suffering for you today.

    08:46-08:54

It's usually when we hear suffering, we're like, ah, but after this message, you're gonna hear suffering and you're gonna be like, yeah, right?

    08:56-08:58

    You're not all convinced.

    08:59-09:00

    Stay with me here.

    09:01-09:06

You're gonna see God's word make some changes in your heart today.

    09:07-09:10

Number one, write this down, suffering, like what's great about suffering?

    09:10-09:11

    What's great about suffering?

    09:11-09:13

Number one, suffering is proof that God is at work.

    09:15-09:16

Look at the first three verses.

    09:17-09:26

It says, "Paul, Silvanus," that's Silas, "and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians "and God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    09:26-09:47

"Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." He says, "We are always to give thanks to God for you, brothers, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing." Stop there.

    09:48-09:50

Verse 3 gives us two marks of a healthy church.

    09:52-09:53

Their faith and love are growing.

    09:54-09:57

That's how you know the church is healthy.

    09:58-10:04

Now look, none of us in this room or watching this stream, none of us have perfect faith.

    10:05-10:06

    None of us do.

    10:08-10:10

And honestly, none of us have perfect love.

    10:13-10:19

But as we grow in our walk with Jesus Christ, we should see these things growing in our life.

    10:19-10:25

You should be able to say, "Yeah, you know what, my faith isn't perfect, Jeff, "You know, my faith is stronger than it was a month ago.

    10:25-10:35

"And yeah, I don't love people as perfectly as I should, "but I really see that Jesus is changing me "and I am growing in the way that I love people." That's what we're looking for is growth.

    10:35-10:37

That's what Paul was commending them for.

    10:37-10:40

He was also commending them, excuse me, for their endurance.

    10:40-10:41

Look at verses four and five.

    10:43-11:12

He says, "Therefore, we ourselves boast about you "in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith." In all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring, this is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God for which you are also suffering." Stop there.

    11:14-11:15

    He commends their endurance.

    11:15-11:17

    What were they enduring?

    11:18-11:19

I mean, were they being arrested?

    11:20-11:21

    Were they losing their jobs?

    11:21-11:23

Were they getting their stuff confiscated?

    11:23-11:25

Were they being beaten? Were they being fined?

    11:25-11:27

Your Bible says the same thing that mine does.

    11:28-11:29

We don't know. No specifics are given.

    11:32-11:35

But here's the point. It doesn't matter.

    11:37-11:42

Because when it comes to suffering, we all get our share, don't we?

    11:43-11:44

    We all get our share.

    11:45-11:47

I mean, yours is going to look different than mine.

    11:48-11:53

But we all get our portion.

    11:55-12:01

But we get this false notion that suffering means that God is absent.

    12:02-12:15

That we're going through this suffering, whatever that looks like for you, this prolonged period of suffering, and we start to think, "You know, maybe God doesn't care about me the way that I thought that He did." Maybe we lost our job.

    12:15-12:22

maybe we have a sick child, maybe we have an unruly child.

    12:25-12:31

Maybe there's a health issue that you're forced to deal with, that you never imagined you'd have to deal with.

    12:33-12:37

And you start to get to the place where you're like, "You know, I thought better.

    12:38-12:42

I thought God cared about me." Have you ever been there?

    12:44-12:45

    I have.

    12:48-13:02

We get to the point that we're like, "God, you're not doing anything." And here, right out of the gate, Paul, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, reminds us that it's quite the opposite.

    13:04-13:06

Suffering doesn't mean the absence of God.

    13:08-13:10

Suffering is the evidence of God at work.

    13:12-13:21

You're like, "How can that be?" Because only God can give you the perseverance to get through the suffering.

    13:21-13:23

That's why you haven't folded or collapsed.

    13:27-13:31

And when it comes to affliction, look, let's just be honest, anybody can be committed to Jesus when it's easy, right?

    13:32-13:36

There's no personal sacrifice, there's no persecution, there's no struggle.

    13:37-13:51

"Who wants to go to church? Okay." But mark this down, because we are seeing this very flagrantly, especially to our friends and neighbors up north in Canada, eh?

    13:52-14:05

When it costs you something to follow Jesus, and you are willing to gladly pay that cost, it proves how much you value Jesus.

    14:06-14:07

It's one of the great things about suffering.

    14:08-14:08

It shows you what you're made of.

    14:10-14:11

    That's God-powered perseverance.

    14:13-14:15

And only when suffering comes will you find out if you have.

    14:18-14:30

If I said to you, "Are you committed to Jesus Christ unto death?" I imagine everybody in here is like, "Yep." And my response is, "We'll see. We'll see." All right, number two.

    14:31-14:32

That's good news about suffering, right?

    14:32-14:33

It's proof that God's at work.

    14:34-14:39

Number two, there's a message I can preach every week.

    14:39-14:39

    It's this one.

    14:41-14:43

And I'm so glad I get to do it this week.

    14:44-14:46

Write this down, number two, great news about suffering.

    14:46-14:48

Things will not always be as they are now.

    14:52-14:59

If you're suffering for any reason, I got some good news for you.

    15:01-15:03

Things will not always be as they are now.

    15:06-15:20

That's why my favorite verse in the Bible, Revelation 21.5 says, "And he who sat on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'" We just sang that, right?

    15:23-15:24

And I'll be honest with you.

    15:26-15:37

There are days I'm dropping my son off at the Watson Institute, and I see some of these parents wheeling their children into school.

    15:38-15:55

I just want to go up and grab them, like by the face, and say, "It's not always going to be this way, because Jesus promised He's making all things new." And I don't do that because I'd probably get arrested if I grabbed people by the face.

    15:57-15:59

But I hope you understand the sentiment here.

    16:03-16:13

Because when we go through prolonged periods of suffering, we start to resolve ourselves to this lie, "Nothing's ever going to change.

    16:14-16:16

It's always going to be like this." Have you ever felt that?

    16:17-16:18

    Because I have.

    16:18-16:19

    "Nothing's going to change.

    16:20-16:21

It's going to be like this.

    16:21-16:23

We just got to resolve ourselves.

    16:23-16:32

I hate this and it stinks and God's obviously not going to do anything about it right now and I guess this is just how it's going to be.

    16:35-16:36

    Here we have a reminder.

    16:38-16:41

This is the thing that Paul just like comes right out of the gate.

    16:42-16:44

First thing he wants the church to know.

    16:46-16:48

Things will not always be as they are now.

    16:49-16:51

Let's look at what he says about that.

    16:51-16:52

    Look at verse six.

    16:53-17:14

It says, "Since indeed God considers it just to repay with affliction those who afflict you and to grant relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels." Stop there.

    17:15-17:18

That last thing, that's the key phrase to this whole passage, this whole sermon.

    17:18-17:29

And really the whole book here, this is the key phrase, "When the Lord Jesus is revealed." That is the game-changing phrase in the passage.

    17:31-17:35

The word revealed is where we get the word apocalypse.

    17:36-17:37

That's where we get that word.

    17:38-17:41

And you're like, "Well, okay, Pastor Jeff, what's he talking about here?

    17:41-17:44

When he's like, 'When the Lord Jesus is revealed,' is he talking about the rapture?

    17:44-17:47

Is he talking about Revelation 19, the battle of Armageddon?

    17:48-17:51

What exactly is he talking about?

    17:52-17:56

In general, he's talking about all of the above.

    17:59-18:03

He's speaking of the rapture, the tribulation, Armageddon.

    18:03-18:05

He's speaking of those things as one event.

    18:05-18:06

We do that all the time.

    18:07-18:11

Like when we talk about the second coming of Jesus, like what do we mean exactly?

    18:12-18:14

We're talking about all that stuff, right?

    18:15-18:17

Like, look at the book of Revelation.

    18:19-18:21

There's a lot of stuff that is going to happen.

    18:24-18:30

But the bottom line here, Paul wants to point out two things that Jesus is going to do when He returns.

    18:31-18:34

You see very clearly in the text, verse 6, He's going to repay.

    18:36-18:42

That's why the title of this message is "Payback is Coming." First thing He's going to do is repay, verse 6.

    18:42-18:43

That's the second thing He's going to do.

    18:43-18:55

Verse 7 is "relieve His people." And that's why I'm so happy to tell you that things will not always be as they are now.

    18:57-19:07

However, if you're sitting here today, you're watching this and you don't know Jesus Christ, and you're hearing me say, things will not always be as they are now.

    19:08-19:10

If you don't know Jesus, please hear me.

    19:12-19:13

Don't get too excited about that.

    19:15-19:21

Because things are going to get a lot worse for you, if you don't know Jesus Christ.

    19:23-19:24

    Look at verse 8.

    19:27-19:39

It says, "Yet Jesus revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Our Lord Jesus.

    19:43-19:46

    He's coming to inflict vengeance.

    19:50-20:03

If you're carrying this idea that Jesus is some effeminate Mr. Rogers, just give everybody a hug kind of guy, I'd suggest you underline verse 8 in your Bible.

    20:04-20:08

Because it says He's coming back inflict vengeance.

    20:10-20:10

    Man, on who?

    20:11-20:12

    Well, he tells us who.

    20:13-20:14

In verse 8 he gives us two groups.

    20:14-20:17

First of all, those who refuse to know God.

    20:19-20:22

You know, Romans 1 tells us that no one has an excuse.

    20:22-20:26

There's not going to be anybody that stands before God like, "I didn't know you were up there.

    20:26-20:34

I didn't know you existed." Romans 1 says nobody has an excuse because God has revealed himself to the world through creation.

    20:35-20:38

And He calls us to respond to that revelation.

    20:39-20:41

And some people just flat out refuse.

    20:41-20:42

I don't want to know God.

    20:42-20:44

I know there's an obvious Creator.

    20:44-20:45

I don't care to know Him.

    20:48-21:04

And it's at this point when we talk about God inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God, somebody immediately says, "Pastor Jeff, what about that guy sitting in Africa that ain't never seen a Bible?" I'm like, "Okay, first of all, 'ain't never seen' that's like terrible English.

    21:05-21:14

"Please restructure your protest." But you know, what about that guy sitting in Africa that he doesn't know, he never been to church?

    21:16-21:18

What about that guy, Pastor Jeff?

    21:18-21:20

I'll tell you about that guy.

    21:21-21:23

Romans 1 says he's without excuse.

    21:25-21:27

Let me tell you something else about that guy.

    21:27-21:28

God will deal with him in perfect justice.

    21:31-21:32

Do you believe that God's just?

    21:34-21:35

and God will deal with him in perfect justice.

    21:37-21:39

    But what about you?

    21:40-21:46

Let me ask you a question, you who wants to talk about that random guy sitting in Africa that ain't never seen a Bible.

    21:47-21:49

How much have you thought about that guy in the past week?

    21:52-21:57

Has he consumed your thoughts, talking to your friends about this random hypothetical guy?

    21:59-22:08

It's just so interesting to me that when people are confronted with the gospel, Now all of a sudden, I'm gonna talk about some hypothetical guy sitting in Africa.

    22:10-22:17

And my response is, look, God will deal with him in perfect justice, but I know you, for sure, have no excuse.

    22:20-22:28

The second group of people, he talks about that we're going to experience this vengeance that Jesus will inflict.

    22:30-22:31

People that don't obey the gospel.

    22:33-22:39

They know about Jesus, and they have chosen to reject everything they know about Jesus.

    22:43-22:46

They hear the command from the gospel, "You need to turn from your sin.

    22:46-22:54

You need to receive Jesus Christ." "No, I will not do that." Well, then you have to face the alternative.

    22:57-23:01

That's who's going to experience this vengeance.

    23:01-23:03

You're like, "Well, what is the vengeance?

    23:03-23:11

Like, what is this vengeance that Jesus is going to inflict?" And that's verse 9.

    23:12-23:17

And I'm going to tell you, this is one of the most sobering verses in the entire Bible.

    23:19-23:21

Look at verse 9 with me.

    23:24-23:25

    What is the vengeance?

    23:25-23:43

He says, "They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His might." He's talking about eternal hell.

    23:46-23:53

And He shares the two most horrifying features of hell.

    23:54-24:02

The Bible says so much about hell, but right here, he shares the two worst aspects of hell.

    24:03-24:05

    Number one, eternal destruction.

    24:09-24:14

That word "eternal" is used about 75 times in the New Testament.

    24:14-24:15

Do you know what the word means?

    24:17-24:18

    It means eternal.

    24:20-24:30

And there are people that today want to explain away hell, rewrite doctrine, let's explain around it.

    24:32-24:34

I don't know how to explain around this.

    24:35-24:41

The Bible very clearly says this is a forever destination.

    24:44-24:44

    Eternal.

    24:47-24:51

There is no eventual annihilation like some people teach.

    24:52-24:54

    The word eternal means eternal.

    24:56-24:57

    There's no reprieve.

    24:59-25:00

    There's no relief.

    25:01-25:02

    There's no probationary period.

    25:03-25:04

    There's no second chance.

    25:06-25:08

    He describes it as eternal.

    25:09-25:10

    Like eternal what?

    25:11-25:12

    Eternal destruction.

    25:13-25:14

Like, well, what does that mean?

    25:16-25:25

Well, really the best synonym I can give you for the word "destruction" is the word "ruin." Eternal ruin.

    25:25-25:26

    It's eternal tragedy.

    25:26-25:28

    It's eternal loss.

    25:32-25:47

You know, we hear eternal, you know, really don't think of it as like it's hours and days and months and years and I'm watching the time tick, tick away.

    25:48-25:49

    Like, it's not that.

    25:51-26:02

You need to think of it as one moment of the worst grief imaginable, and that moment itself never ends.

    26:05-26:07

In other words, just think of your life.

    26:09-26:13

Can you think to like the worst moment of your life?

    26:14-26:20

Maybe it was a moment of incredible pain or tragedy or loss or regret.

    26:20-26:22

Can you think of a time like that in your life?

    26:25-26:30

That you were just completely undone, completely devastated, completely ruined.

    26:32-26:33

Can you think of that time in your life?

    26:37-26:39

    And that moment never ending.

    26:42-26:42

    It's just no relief.

    26:45-26:48

And you see the tragedy of hell is this is far worse.

    26:50-27:00

Because whatever horrible thing you endured in that moment we were just recalling, hell is spending eternity in the tragedy of rejecting Jesus Christ.

    27:01-27:09

God gave me His grace and I said, "No!" I ruin myself for eternity!

    27:10-27:12

And I get to live with that for eternity.

    27:14-27:18

That's the first horrifying feature, it's eternal destruction.

    27:21-27:23

Second horrifying feature, he says it's away from the presence of the Lord.

    27:27-27:29

It's away from the presence of the Lord.

    27:29-27:30

Do you know why hell is so horrible?

    27:31-27:31

Do you know why it's so horrible?

    27:32-27:33

    It's because God isn't there.

    27:34-27:34

    That's why.

    27:36-27:39

Nor is His glory, your Bible says, His goodness.

    27:41-27:41

    It's not there.

    27:45-27:47

You're like, "What do you mean, Jeff?" Here's what I mean.

    27:49-27:56

On earth, right now, even in this life, an unbeliever knows about the goodness of God.

    27:57-28:07

Somebody that lives their whole life and has nothing to do with God, there is a real sense in which they get to experience the goodness of God.

    28:08-28:09

    Like, what do you mean?

    28:11-28:27

I mean, an unbeliever, just by virtue of living on this earth, gets to experience things like love, family, and friendship, and beauty, and times of happiness.

    28:30-28:31

    Because God is here.

    28:33-28:35

But in eternal hell, that's all over.

    28:38-28:40

There are no more moments of any of those things.

    28:45-28:53

Because God's grace and presence is still just so powerful, even here in this fallen, cursed world.

    28:58-29:09

You see, that's a real issue because this world is so full of God's mercy that it just sins freely and joyfully.

    29:12-29:19

Because God hasn't just brought this destruction upon the first moment of sin.

    29:19-29:21

The world starts to presume it is mercy.

    29:22-29:23

I can live however I want.

    29:24-29:25

I can do whatever I want.

    29:29-29:31

Because God's obviously not going to do anything.

    29:33-29:52

Oh, and then you know somebody gets up and preaches a message like this and people hearing this are like, "No, no, no, no, Jeff, you're so out of touch." You know, this whole idea of divine judgment, like...

    29:55-29:56

    So unfair.

    29:59-30:00

So unfair, God wouldn't do that.

    30:01-30:08

You mean to tell me you really believe that God would, God would allow someone to go to hell for eternity.

    30:12-30:15

And I would say, well, look, it's not a message that I made up.

    30:16-30:21

It's the message that he very clearly said, in His Word on many, many pages.

    30:24-30:32

But you get the guy, and I've told you before, there've been times going through the Bible, we've preached on hell in this church, and I've told you, we've had people get up and walk out.

    30:33-30:51

I remember one time I said, "Hell is a real place, "and real people really go there." This whole row of visitors got up, single file walked out, and it wasn't like, "Hey, where's the bathroom?" It was, "Start the car." At the time, that row of visitors made up about half of the church.

    30:52-30:54

It's tough to see half of the church walk out.

    30:56-31:01

But you get people that are like, "Well, hell's unfair, that's harsh.

    31:02-31:14

God wouldn't do that." I've heard it so many times over the years, and I imagine many of you have too, people say something like this, "I don't believe a loving God would send someone to hell." You ever heard somebody say that?

    31:14-31:21

"I don't believe a loving God would send someone to hell." Well, allow me to respond to that.

    31:24-31:33

Somebody says, "I don't believe a loving God would send somebody to hell." I would say, "Well, first of all, God's love is not in question." Look at the cross.

    31:35-31:36

God's love isn't on trial here.

    31:37-31:40

You want to know what God's love looks like?

    31:41-31:41

    Look at the cross.

    31:42-31:47

Because the Bible says God demonstrated His love through the death of His Son.

    31:47-31:50

The Bible says God spared not His own Son.

    31:51-31:55

And that's the kind of love that I can't fathom, because I wouldn't do that.

    31:55-31:57

And I've told you that before, and I stand by that.

    31:58-32:02

If the salvation of the world meant me sacrificing my Son, you're all doomed.

    32:04-32:04

    I wouldn't do it.

    32:06-32:07

    Either of my sons.

    32:09-32:10

You see, God's not like that.

    32:11-32:18

God was willing to give His Son so that you could be saved.

    32:22-32:22

    That's my first response.

    32:23-32:24

    God's love isn't in question.

    32:25-32:31

And the guys say, "Well, I don't believe a loving God would send someone to hell." Here's another response I have for that.

    32:32-32:36

"Okay, you think hell is unfair.

    32:36-32:37

    You think hell is unjust.

    32:37-32:38

    You think it's harsh.

    32:38-32:45

you this, what would you have God do then? So it's obviously you know better than God.

    32:47-33:13

You tell me, and maybe God's listening, but what do you think God should do with someone that would wholesale reject the gospel of Jesus Christ? I don't want God telling me what to do. I don't want anything to do with his son. I don't want anything. Okay, well, If you think the penalty that's being described here is too much, then you don't really understand the crime.

    33:17-33:20

You don't really understand how horrible sin is.

    33:24-33:32

Sin is not, "Whoops, I accidentally put the salt in the pepper shaker." You have rebelled against a holy God.

    33:35-33:37

You think the penalty is too much?

    33:37-33:38

    You don't understand the cross.

    33:40-33:43

I don't believe a loving God would send someone to hell.

    33:46-33:47

    Well, I tell people this.

    33:51-33:52

    Here's a response.

    33:53-33:56

I say, "You know, an unbeliever would be miserable in heaven.

    33:57-33:58

    Do you know that?

    33:59-34:03

An unbeliever would be miserable in heaven." I mean, think about it.

    34:04-34:08

Okay, so you have this guy that spends his whole life saying, "I don't want God.

    34:09-34:11

    I don't want God's truth.

    34:11-34:13

I don't want to be around God's people.

    34:13-34:16

I don't want to worship." Well guess what heaven is?

    34:19-34:25

God's presence, God's truth, God's people, worshiping for all of eternity.

    34:26-34:28

So is the unbeliever going to be comfortable there?

    34:29-34:42

You spent your whole life saying, "I don't want anything to do with these things." And as horrifying as it is to think about, listen, hell is God giving people what they want.

    34:45-34:48

God says, "You don't want anything to do with me.

    34:48-34:50

You want out of my presence.

    34:52-34:52

    Okay.

    34:54-34:55

    I'll give you that.

    35:00-35:40

So that's who goes, that's what vengeance is. Then why? Why will God inflict vengeance? Why will He do this? Look at verse 6 again. One word. It says, "Since indeed God considers it just to repay." Just. Like, why will God inflict vengeance? God says this is justice. God says it is the right thing to do. God says listen the punishment fits the crime.

    35:44-35:53

So for anybody here watching this that thinks this is too harsh or or uncomfortable or unfair or whatever.

    35:56-36:08

God very clearly says, "Look, this is the right thing." And I'm not gonna argue with him because he is God and I am not.

    36:09-36:16

Oh, and verse seven says, "And," do you notice that?

    36:16-36:23

"and grant relief." It's carrying over from verse six.

    36:24-36:26

So try to wrap your brain around this.

    36:28-36:46

Just as God says, "It is just to shut out of my presence "those who reject me," God's also saying, "It is just to grant relief for my people." But I gotta be honest with you, That's harder for me to wrap my brain around.

    36:49-36:57

That God says, "I'm going to bring relief." And by the way, it is absolutely the just, the righteous, the perfect thing to do.

    36:59-37:00

Now, look, don't get me wrong.

    37:00-37:02

I'm happy that relief is coming.

    37:02-37:05

I am so happy that relief is coming, but here's my point.

    37:06-37:08

God says it's the just thing.

    37:08-37:10

    It's the right thing.

    37:10-37:15

And I look at that and I look at my life and I'm like, I don't deserve it, right?

    37:16-37:21

God's promised me relief and he says, he says, it's justice that's going to bring you relief.

    37:21-37:23

    And I'm like, I don't deserve it.

    37:23-37:25

How can it be the right thing?

    37:28-37:31

Well, that statement really says nothing about me and it says everything about Jesus.

    37:33-37:43

See what God's saying is because of what Jesus did and because you have believed in the promise of Jesus, it is totally the right thing to fulfill Jesus' promise to you.

    37:45-37:49

God says it's justice because of what Jesus did.

    37:51-38:03

That's why 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.

    38:07-38:08

    It's rest.

    38:10-38:11

    It's comfort.

    38:13-38:16

Like, well, what else does he have in store for his people?

    38:16-38:17

    Look at verse 10.

    38:19-38:33

Verse 10 says, "When he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints and to be marveled at among all who have believed because our testimony to you was believed, he will be glorified in us." What does that mean?

    38:33-38:39

Oh man, I could do like four more messages just in this verse.

    38:39-38:40

I'm going to give you the really short version, okay?

    38:41-38:53

Basically, he's talking about how on that day, we are going to, church, we are going to stand in awe of the salvation that he manifested, and we are never going to get over that.

    38:55-38:56

Like, well, what do you mean?

    38:57-39:19

Like right now, in this church, we can marvel at what God's doing at the work of salvation he's doing in this group, or what he's doing with the the mission trips that our church has been involved in, and the missions that our church supports, and we hear all these stories of the way God's at work, and we're like in awe of that, like, "God, you are awesome." Now, hold that thought.

    39:21-39:48

Imagine, imagine getting the full view of God's plan of salvation globally for all of history. How the sacrificial death and glorious resurrection of the incorporable Son of God redeemed and purified fallen people from every tribe and nation to join the marriage supper of the Lamb and worship around His throne.

    39:49-39:50

    Ah!

    39:53-40:18

It is going to be awesome on that day to say, "Jesus, look what you did, how you redeemed." All these things that brought so much glory to your name and so much healing and said so much about the grace and goodness of your Father.

    40:19-40:20

Look at what you did, Jesus.

    40:21-40:22

We're going to see this on a global scale.

    40:26-40:28

Things will not always be as they are now.

    40:31-40:36

Someday - listen - the curtain is going to close.

    40:39-40:42

Someday the end credits of human history are going to roll.

    40:44-40:48

The last page of the book of this era is going to be written.

    40:51-40:54

    And eternity begins for everyone.

    40:58-41:00

Things will not always be as they were.

    41:03-41:07

And finally, great news about suffering.

    41:11-41:12

Number three, write this down, it doesn't stop our mission.

    41:15-41:16

We're going to close with this.

    41:16-41:30

It says, "To this end, we always pray for you that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power.

    41:32-41:40

So that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and you in him according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    41:44-41:46

So here, Paul says we're praying for three things.

    41:47-41:49

Number one, that God will make you worthy of his calling.

    41:51-41:54

God's put a calling in your life, and you're like, I am so not worthy of that.

    41:54-41:55

    You're right, you're not.

    41:55-41:56

That's why God has to make you worthy.

    41:57-41:59

Right, he goes, I'm praying for that.

    41:59-42:01

God would equip you to be the person he's called you to be.

    42:02-42:04

The person he's declared you to be in his son.

    42:04-42:13

Number two, not only will God make you worthy, he said we're praying that God would fulfill every result for good and every work of faith by his power.

    42:13-42:16

In other words, he's saying, I'm praying that God would empower you to serve him.

    42:18-42:28

The third thing he's praying for is that the name of Jesus would be glorified, which is the result, really, the first two, the result of truly serving Jesus.

    42:29-42:31

To this end, we always pray.

    42:33-42:38

Because you're enduring suffering, this is why we're praying.

    42:41-42:49

Because your love is increasing, your faith is increasing, you're under the pressures of affliction, and there's a glorious future ahead.

    42:49-42:54

So listen, he says, because all this is true, he says, that's why we're praying.

    42:58-43:00

Now it's a clear reminder that suffering doesn't stop the mission.

    43:02-43:03

    We've got work to do.

    43:05-43:06

Church, we've got work to do.

    43:07-43:18

And that work begins with falling on our faces and asking God to empower the work that He's called us to do.

    43:21-43:23

    Suffering doesn't stop the mission.

    43:24-43:26

There's so much more I could say about that.

    43:28-43:40

But just to say that, you know, with COVID, I foolishly and wrongly thought that at the beginning of the pandemic, that it was going to shut our church down, like permanently.

    43:42-43:44

Just confessing, I'm just being honest with you.

    43:44-43:48

Like when COVID first hit, I'm like, what's that gonna do to our church?

    43:49-43:55

We're gonna be like, and then we lost so many people that had to move to take care of elderly parents or had to move for work or whatever.

    43:55-44:00

We just lost so many key leaders, and I thought we were going to be sunk.

    44:03-44:04

    I was wrong.

    44:06-44:08

    Suffering doesn't stop the mission.

    44:10-44:12

I've shared with you before, we've seen the same thing in Thailand.

    44:15-44:18

They're dealing with the same kind of stuff where they've closed entire villages down.

    44:18-44:19

How are we going to reach these people?

    44:22-44:32

Through the marvels of modern technology, the Lord has enabled us to reach even more people than ever through simulcasting our teaching time.

    44:35-44:36

    Suffering doesn't stop the mission.

    44:39-44:40

That's why we've got to be praying.

    44:43-44:47

You know, suffering is going to come to everyone.

    44:49-44:52

in some way, to some degree.

    44:53-44:59

But church, today, we have to bag the idea that it means that God is absent, because He's not.

    45:01-45:04

Bag the idea that things will never change, because they will.

    45:06-45:11

Bag the idea that the suffering is going to be a roadblock for our ministry, because it's not.

    45:13-45:13

    See?

    45:15-45:16

I told you suffering was good news.

    45:18-45:18

    Let's pray.

    45:20-45:26

Father in Heaven, I don't really know what else to say.

    45:29-45:42

You have this glorious purpose in Your Son that You accomplished through the cross, through His resurrection.

    45:42-45:58

You're going to ultimately fulfill every promise He has revealed, that's what you've told us in your Word today, and I feel like even though we maybe went a little over time, I feel like we barely scratched the surface of everything this passage is telling us.

    46:00-46:09

There is a glorious future for your people, and there is a horrifying future for people that refuse your gift of grace.

    46:11-46:21

your church, Father. I pray for the things that Paul was praying for for this church.

    46:22-47:10

I pray, Father, that you would make us worthy of your calling. I pray that you would fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith that this church is going after in the name of Jesus. And ultimately, Father, I pray above all things that the name of Jesus Christ would glorified in this church. It's not about any individual or group of people or a name on a sign, "Father, this church is about the name of Jesus Christ being glorified." Please, Father, make that happen. And we know that means it's going to be through suffering that If you choose to work that way.

    47:13-47:13

    Glory through suffering.

    47:16-47:17

    Thank You, Father.

    47:18-47:20

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read 2 Thessalonians 1:1-12

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. God says repaying with affliction(vengeance) is “just” (2 Thes 1:6). How so? How is it “just” for God to give relief to His people (2 Thes 1:7)?

  3. ”A loving God wouldn’t send someone to hell.” How would you reply to this?

  4. Read 2 Thes 1:9 again. What phrases are used to describe hell? How does this motivate you to reach the lost people you know?

  5. How is suffering proof that God is at work (2 Thes 1:4-5)?

  • 00:00-00:01

    Amen. Well, good morning.

    00:04-00:05

Let's pray together before we get started.

    00:08-00:11

Lord God, what an amazing morning already.

    00:12-00:28

Thank you for what you're doing this morning, God, and I just pray that as we turn to your word, that we would just be open to receive it, Lord, and that you would give me your grace, God, the blessing to be able to communicate it clearly.

    00:29-00:32

So please just bless the rest of our time this morning together.

    00:32-00:34

    In Jesus' name, amen.

    00:38-00:42

Open your Bibles with me please to Zechariah chapter 3.

    00:43-00:46

And for those of you who don't know me, my name is Justin.

    00:47-00:52

I'm married to my lovely wife Michelle, and we're blessed with three amazing daughters.

    00:54-01:05

And a few years ago, before my third daughter was born, we were on the last day of a family trip and we all went out to breakfast before we were going to head over to the airport.

    01:07-01:13

Well, actually, I should ask at this point, is everyone okay with me being real today?

    01:14-01:15

    Is that okay?

    01:16-01:18

Because this story is about to get real life.

    01:20-01:27

So, we're talking, we're laughing about the trip, breakfast is going great, everything's fine.

    01:27-01:32

But then I notice across the table that one of my daughters has stopped eating.

    01:34-01:44

So I asked her if she felt okay, and she got down, walked over to me, and the next thing I knew, her breakfast was back up and on the floor.

    01:46-01:50

Now, I'm sure that many here have been in a similar situation at some point.

    01:50-01:57

You're away from home, you have a sick kid, your first thought is, "Is she okay?" Right? That's the only thing that you care about.

    01:58-02:06

But once it seems like she is okay, you start wondering, "Was it the food? Was it something we did yesterday?

    02:07-02:08

Can we still make it home?

    02:10-02:11

    Is she done?"

    02:12-02:13

    (Laughter)

    02:14-02:20

And I would love to tell you that she was done, and the rest of the trip was smooth sailing.

    02:22-02:25

But as every parent here would correctly guess, she wasn't done.

    02:27-02:31

And on the way to the airport, her sister joined in by throwing up all over me.

    02:33-02:38

So now we have two sick kids, otherwise acting totally normal, by the way.

    02:39-02:44

And we're just scrambling now to get everybody through security and get them home.

    02:47-02:51

And I would love to tell you that by the time we got to the gate, they were done.

    02:53-02:55

    Parents, were they done?

    02:57-02:59

    No, no, no, no.

    03:00-03:02

Because sitting at the gate, we had another incident.

    03:03-03:05

This time it went all over Michelle.

    03:06-03:08

So the luggage is already checked.

    03:09-03:21

So, we're about to board, and I am literally sprinting back through the airport, trying to find one of those pairs of souvenir sweatpants that my wife can change into before the plane takes off.

    03:24-03:28

And, Church, I would love to tell you

    03:28-03:29

    (Laughter)

    03:29-03:31

that once we got on the plane, they were done.

    03:33-03:34

    Sean, were they done?

    03:36-03:37

    No.

    03:38-03:38

    No, they weren't.

    03:40-03:52

You're probably wondering, "How much did they eat for breakfast?" Well, we got on the plane, each of us took a kid on our lap, and honestly, I lost track of how many times it happened on that flight.

    03:53-03:58

I did learn that it's almost impossible for kids under three to aim into those air sickness bags.

    04:00-04:01

    It was all over me.

    04:02-04:08

And thinking back, I'm actually so proud of them because they never complained, not once.

    04:09-04:17

They were incredibly brave, but they were just alternating between being asleep in our arms and waking up to let some more out.

    04:17-04:23

Now, thankfully, we did make it home, and the next day, everybody was fine.

    04:23-04:24

    (Laughter)

    04:25-04:31

So, I do apologize to anyone who's now queasy, but why did I tell you that story?

    04:33-04:38

The reason is, in doing my job as a parent that day, I was filthy.

    04:39-04:44

I mean, my shirt and my jeans were crispy from everything drying up.

    04:45-04:50

I could not wait to get myself cleaned up and get into some clean clothes.

    04:52-04:56

And even in very different situations, we know that feeling, right?

    04:57-05:20

After doing yard work all day, or going for a run, or hitting the gym, whatever it is, and you're like, "I'm pretty filthy right now." And if we're honest, sometimes we even have that feeling beyond the cleanliness of our body or our clothing, because sometimes we can feel the filth of sin.

    05:21-05:22

    Can't we?

    05:24-05:28

And I'm not talking about the sin that's all around us, though we do feel that.

    05:29-05:48

I'm talking about, personally, when we look at our past, mistakes we've made, things we've done, even something that we're struggling to stop doing right now, and we think, I can't go to God like this, or I can't go to church like this.

    05:49-05:54

Can I even call myself a follower of Jesus when I'm this filthy?

    05:56-06:01

And if you've ever felt that way, I'm gonna give you basically the entire sermon up front.

    06:03-06:09

God sent someone to remove the filth of sin, his son, Jesus Christ, amen?

    06:11-06:23

And even though we read about Jesus accomplishing his work on the cross in the New Testament, God often explained exactly what Jesus would accomplish beforehand in the Old Testament.

    06:24-06:26

And we're gonna see an example of that from Zechariah.

    06:27-06:33

we're going to see how Jesus removes our sin and what that means for us.

    06:34-06:38

But before we jump into scripture, there are a few things that you do need to know.

    06:39-06:46

So prior to the time of Zechariah, God allowed Jerusalem to be conquered and the Israelites were taken captive to Babylon.

    06:48-06:53

Many years later, by God's hand, Israel was allowed to return to their land.

    06:54-07:01

And Zechariah was actually in that first group of Israelites who left Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem and the temple.

    07:02-07:09

And it was during that rebuilding era that Zechariah started receiving prophetic visions from God.

    07:09-07:10

And we're going to read one today.

    07:12-07:17

So on your outline, how Jesus removes the filth of sin.

    07:18-07:22

Number one, he rebukes your accuser.

    07:24-07:27

So, Zechariah chapter three in verse one.

    07:28-07:36

"Then he showed me Joshua the high priest "standing before the angel of the Lord "and Satan standing at his right to accuse him.

    07:37-07:41

"And the Lord said to Satan, "The Lord rebuke you, O Satan.

    07:42-07:45

"The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you.

    07:45-07:48

Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?

    07:49-07:53

Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments.

    07:54-07:55

    Stop there.

    07:56-07:59

This vision feels like a courtroom scene, doesn't it?

    08:00-08:04

On the stand, so to speak, is Joshua the high priest.

    08:05-08:12

And we know from Ezra 3 that this Joshua is, not surprisingly, Israel's high priest at the time.

    08:13-08:14

He was their leader and representative.

    08:16-08:19

Now, the judge in this scene is the angel of the Lord.

    08:20-08:21

    Who's that?

    08:22-08:34

Well, in the Old Testament, "the angel of the Lord" typically refers to a pre-incarnate Jesus, meaning Jesus appeared in this vision before he was born to Mary.

    08:35-08:39

And that is a Bible study in itself, and I do not mean to breeze by it.

    08:39-08:56

But you actually don't even have to trust me on that, because notice right here in verse two that as the angel of the Lord speaks, your Bible reads, "And the Lord said." So from that and from later verses that we're going to see, we can definitely make that connection.

    08:58-09:04

So Joshua's on trial, Jesus is the judge, and lastly, we have the prosecutor, Satan.

    09:05-09:09

The Bible tells us that Satan accuses God's people day and night.

    09:10-09:14

So bringing accusations like this is right in his wheelhouse.

    09:16-09:43

What did he accuse Joshua of doing? Well, the Bible doesn't say, other than pointing out his filthy clothes, which symbolize sin that we all have. But what the Bible does tell us is how the judge, Jesus, responded. He said, "The Lord rebuke you, O Satan." Okay, gavel hit, court adjourned, whatever Satan's case against Joshua was, it's thrown out.

    09:45-09:50

But why? It wasn't because Joshua gave a great defense.

    09:50-09:56

He didn't say anything. But when Jesus spoke, he gave the reason that it was case closed.

    09:58-10:11

He said, "The Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you." And this is crazy because Jesus, as the judge, is saying the verdict isn't based on what Joshua did.

    10:11-10:15

It's based on what Jesus did in choosing Joshua.

    10:15-10:21

He chose Joshua, he chose Jerusalem, he chose Israel as his people.

    10:21-10:26

And so Jesus says to Satan, it doesn't even matter what your accusation is.

    10:26-10:29

We're done here because he is mine.

    10:30-10:34

The Bible says we love because he first loved us, amen?

    10:37-10:48

And Jesus continues in verse two, "Is not this a brand plucked from the fire?" And you know, when I first read this, I thought he was making a threat.

    10:49-10:57

Maybe I was fired up for some other reason, but I thought he was saying, "Listen, Satan, I chose Jerusalem.

    10:58-11:01

So if you want a piece of Joshua, you gotta go through me.

    11:02-11:05

Am I not holding a flaming torch right now?

    11:05-11:06

    You want some of this?

    11:09-11:13

Well, thankfully, Jesus is God and I am not.

    11:14-11:17

And that is not what he's saying.

    11:18-11:22

Jesus is not talking about a literal burning stick from a fire.

    11:23-11:24

    He's talking about Joshua.

    11:26-11:32

Joshua was in the fire of Babylon, in the fire of God's judgment against Israel.

    11:33-11:39

And God reached into that fire and pulled him out, filthy clothes and all.

    11:40-11:42

And that extends to all of Israel too.

    11:42-11:49

They were exiled to Babylon because of their sin, but rescued from Babylon because of God's grace.

    11:50-11:53

So this scene was an incredible message to send to Israel.

    11:55-11:57

But what does all of this mean for us today?

    11:59-12:06

Well, just like Joshua, we are accused, day and night.

    12:07-12:09

    Have you ever felt accused?

    12:10-12:16

Have you ever felt or heard those charges against you that feel like they're coming from the inside?

    12:17-12:34

Things like, "You let your family down again." Or, "I feel like a failure. Actually, I know that I'm a failure." Or, "Look at your anger, lust, greed, fill in the blank.

    12:35-12:44

What's wrong with you?" Well, just like in a court case, sometimes the accusations we hear are flat-out lies.

    12:45-12:49

But sometimes they're true, and sometimes even backed by evidence.

    12:50-12:55

memories of when we fell short or when we gave in to a temptation to sin.

    12:59-13:31

But just like Joshua, for those who believe, the verdict isn't based on us. And our accuser always leaves that part out. So when you hear that voice of accusation in your head, you can respond even out loud with the truth. Jesus chose me. He knew I would sin and yet just like Israel was rescued from Babylon, he rescued me from the judgment of exile that I deserved.

    13:33-13:58

The first step here in Jesus removing the filth of our sin is removing those accusations because instead of living in the depression of past mistakes, we can live in joy because if you have repented and you believe in Jesus, your salvation is based on what he did, not what you did. But wait a second, Justin, wait a second.

    13:59-14:36

So Jesus knows about all this filth and he still throws out the accusations against me, but does that mean that Jesus is just cool with my sin? That when I I come to Jesus, he leaves me as I am and I can just do whatever I want? I realized no one was actually thinking that. But regardless, Jesus is not done here. Point number two today, how Jesus removes the filth of sin. He replaces your dirty laundry. So let's go back to the text and we'll pick up in verse 3.

    14:40-14:46

Now Joshua was standing before the angel, clothed with filthy garments.

    14:47-15:02

And the angel said to those who were standing before him, "Remove the filthy garments from him." And to him he said, "Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments." Pause there.

    15:03-15:07

Remember, the filthy garments on Joshua represent sin.

    15:08-15:18

As Jesus orders the filthy garments removed, he's saying that the iniquity or the sin of Joshua and Israel by extension is removed.

    15:19-15:47

But notice in verse 4, the angel of the Lord, who we know is Jesus, says, "Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments." So the removal of filthy clothes symbolizes the removal of sin, and giving Joshua clean clothes symbolizes Joshua being made pure by receiving Jesus' righteousness.

    15:48-15:50

    But do we need both?

    15:51-15:52

    Think about it this way.

    15:53-16:02

Just a few months ago, it's garbage night, and the way that our garage is situated, I just have to pull my car out to get to the cans.

    16:03-16:09

So I'm backing up, but I hear, "Thud, thud, thud." That doesn't sound good.

    16:11-16:16

So I get out, and I see that the front tire on the driver's side is completely flat.

    16:17-16:22

I'm thinking, "Okay, I'll put the spare on, and call about a new tire in the morning.

    16:24-16:43

The problem is, for some reason, the previous owner of my car had wheel locks put on, and put on so tightly that even with me yanking and pulling and eventually jumping on the wrench, I couldn't get the lug nut to budge, so I can't get the wheel off.

    16:45-16:49

The next morning, I call roadside, I explain the situation.

    16:49-16:54

This guy shows up with a super drill and takes the wheel lock off in two seconds.

    16:55-16:57

At least I tell myself it was a super drill.

    16:57-17:06

And then we put the spare on and we go to admire our work and the spare is completely flat.

    17:08-17:13

So the guy asks me, "Do you have an air pump?" And I'm like, "No.

    17:13-17:23

Don't you have an air pump?" And he's like, "No, you might make it to a gas station now." And he left.

    17:26-17:32

Now eventually my neighbor bailed me out because he did have a pump, but back to Jesus removing our sin.

    17:33-17:40

See, if Jesus removed our sin and stopped there, it would be just like the guy who removed my flat tire.

    17:41-17:46

Sure, the flat tire was removed, but with a flat replacement, I still can't drive anywhere.

    17:47-17:51

I needed a replacement of the problem with a solution.

    17:52-17:58

And that replacement is exactly what Zechariah is seeing Joshua receive.

    17:59-19:00

For Joshua, and today for anyone who comes to Jesus, Jesus removes their sin, taking it upon himself and replaces the sin with his righteousness. There is no better exchange in the history of the universe. And yet, during this incredible picture of the redemption of Joshua and Israel and of salvation itself, Zechariah interrupts. Take a look at verse five. And I said, I being Zechariah, let them put a clean turban on his head. So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord was standing by. Now this was not just fashion advice. This comes from Exodus chapter 28. The short version is, the turban was the part of the priestly wardrobe that assured Zechariah Israel's redemption was totally complete.

    19:02-19:15

And with all of this clothing symbolism and background, that's what led me to title this point kind of tongue-in-cheek with the phrase "dirty laundry." Everybody's heard that, right?

    19:16-19:23

Your dirty laundry is simply all the stuff in your life that you don't want anyone else to see.

    19:24-19:26

to stuff that you'd rather stayed hidden.

    19:28-19:39

And while you may face earthly consequences for those things, eternally speaking, your dirty laundry is exactly the kind of stuff that Jesus forgives and removes.

    19:40-19:48

And even more than that, because just like Joshua, your dirty laundry is what Jesus replaces with his righteousness.

    19:49-19:56

And there's so much going on in this passage in terms of Israel, the priesthood, the law, the prophecy.

    19:57-20:04

But the takeaway for us is that through salvation, Jesus exchanges our sin for his perfection.

    20:05-20:07

And we can be assured of that.

    20:08-20:11

You don't have to wonder, you don't have to worry.

    20:12-20:18

Because of what Jesus did and that exchange, if you know him, you are forgiven and accepted by him.

    20:19-20:19

    Amen?

    20:21-20:22

    but it doesn't stop there.

    20:23-20:27

Point number three, how Jesus removes the filth of sin.

    20:28-20:30

    He rewards your obedience.

    20:32-20:33

So let's pick up in verse six.

    20:35-20:40

And the angel of the Lord solemnly assured Joshua, thus says the Lord of hosts.

    20:41-20:44

Before we move on, notice the change in speaker.

    20:45-20:49

The angel of the Lord is now speaking on behalf of the Lord of hosts.

    20:49-20:52

So we're hearing the words of God the Father now.

    20:53-20:54

    Back to verse seven.

    20:56-21:05

Thus says the Lord of hosts, if you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts.

    21:05-21:09

And I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here.

    21:10-21:17

So very simply, God tells Joshua, if you obey, then I will reward you.

    21:18-21:19

    We know how that works.

    21:19-21:24

If you eat your vegetables, then you can have dessert, right?

    21:25-21:30

If you sign up for our emails, then you get 10% off your first order, right?

    21:31-21:32

    Come on, you've been there.

    21:34-21:36

    So what's Joshua's if then?

    21:37-21:39

If you will walk in my ways.

    21:39-21:42

That's living your life the way that God commands.

    21:43-21:44

    If you keep my charge.

    21:45-21:50

In this context, the word charge indicates a duty of ministry.

    21:51-21:55

Remember, Joshua was the high priest, so he has a ministry over all of Israel.

    21:56-22:00

And if Joshua does those things, then what happens?

    22:01-22:07

"You shall rule my house and have charge of my courts." Now, God's earthly house was the temple.

    22:08-22:12

Joshua must obey to continue to serve as the high priest in the temple.

    22:14-22:20

It also says, "I will give you the right of access among those who are standing here." And this vision is in a heavenly setting.

    22:21-22:29

So not only will Joshua access God's house on earth, Joshua's obedience will also give him access to heaven.

    22:30-22:31

    Right? Hold up.

    22:31-22:32

    Hold up.

    22:33-22:35

Didn't we just talk about assurance?

    22:36-22:39

The accusations against Joshua were thrown out.

    22:39-22:43

His filthy clothes were replaced, and now he's clean in the eyes of God.

    22:44-22:48

So is God now saying our obedience is what gets us into heaven?

    22:50-22:51

The answer of course is no.

    22:52-22:57

Once you believe and Jesus replaces your sin with his righteousness, it's a done deal.

    22:59-23:06

From scripture and from the order of events that we see here, it's not if you obey, then you are saved.

    23:07-23:10

It's if you are saved, then you obey.

    23:12-23:14

    We certainly don't obey perfectly.

    23:15-23:24

Even though we are credited with Jesus' righteousness, we still are attached to a sinful flesh in a world of sin, and we stumble.

    23:25-23:28

But we talked about how God chose us.

    23:28-23:31

Obedience is where we choose Him.

    23:33-24:31

Jesus Himself says, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." because, praise God, he's not done with us at the point of salvation. From that point forward, he is continually transforming us to be more and more like his Son, to be more and more obedient. And like we see here, further blessings come from further obedience. And we tend to focus on material blessings, which absolutely do come from the Lord. But what a reward the transformation that we experience is just in itself. And now we're going to see the fulfillment of that transformation process in our final point. Point number four, how Jesus removes the filth of sin. He reunites you with himself. We're going to pick up in verse 8.

    24:35-25:33

"Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for they are men who are assigned. Behold, I will bring my servant the branch. For behold, on the stone that I have set before Joshua, on a single stone with seven eyes, I will engrave its inscription, declares the Lord and I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. In that day, declares the Lord of hosts, every one of you will invite his neighbor to come under his vine and under his fig tree. Now if you're like me, you probably have about 17 questions about what we just read. But let's start with me asking you a Jesus, that's right, Jesus, #SundaySchool, right?

    25:34-25:42

Remember, God the Father is speaking, and when he says he's going to bring the branch here, he is in fact talking about Jesus.

    25:44-25:52

And the terms here are actually even more loud and clear than we realize at first, because the servant, the branch, the stone.

    25:53-25:59

All of these are used throughout Old Testament prophecy to describe the promised Messiah.

    26:01-26:04

So question two of Apostle 17.

    26:05-26:06

I want to ask you to answer this one.

    26:07-26:09

Why does the stone have seven eyes?

    26:10-26:12

And there are differing views on this.

    26:13-26:18

In the Bible, the number seven symbolizes perfection and completeness.

    26:18-26:25

So some see this as pointing to the omniscience of Jesus. He sees and knows everything.

    26:26-26:46

Some see it as Jesus' ability to perfectly watch over his church. Some see it as a prophecy that the Holy Spirit will come upon him to enable his earthly ministry. Whatever your particular view is, the point is Jesus was sent with the power of God to accomplish his work.

    26:47-26:52

Jesus was empowered by God to be the greatest gift that was ever given to mankind.

    26:55-26:57

And you know, I recently gave my wife a gift.

    26:59-27:43

Obviously a very different kind of gift. It was not perfectly complete, and it didn't have seven eyes. It was a piece of jewelry and I had it engraved. I made that decision to make it more personal and, I hope, more beautiful for her. And God says here that on His gift, on the stone, He would engrave an inscription and remove the iniquity of the land in a single Now, Zechariah did not know what day that would be, but at our point in history, we know what day that was.

    27:44-27:46

The day that Jesus died on the cross.

    27:49-29:27

That day, man engraved Jesus' body with nails that kept him hanging there, the crown of thorns that dug into his head and the spear that pierced his side. And as his wrath poured out, God did engrave an inscription on the stone. God wrote, "Sin is removed." And it was the most beautiful engraving in history because by his sacrifice, Jesus removed our sin. Amen? The promise of this scripture was fulfilled and the sins of anyone who would ever trust in Jesus were removed in a single day. And because of that, we also see the second promise fulfilled. "In that day," declares the Lord of hosts, "every one of you will invite his neighbor to come under his vine and under his fig tree. This is a biblical picture of peace and safety and through Jesus our sin is removed and we have been peacefully reunited with God today. But we also await this promise's final fulfillment when Jesus returns to remove the sin of all creation and make all things new and And all believers will enjoy eternal peace and safety reunited with Him in heaven.

    29:30-29:40

And so as we close, I just want to ask myself and anyone who knows Jesus, do we live like Jesus removed our sin?

    29:42-29:45

Maybe a better question is, what does living like that even look like?

    29:47-29:51

As one example, we talked earlier about feeling accused.

    29:52-29:57

When you get hit with those accusations of the enemy, respond with the truth.

    29:58-30:01

You are chosen and loved by Jesus.

    30:02-30:05

And while we are not perfect, He is.

    30:06-30:15

Or maybe you're just feeling filthy, whether it's guilt from the past or maybe you're battling a sin issue right now.

    30:16-30:23

Through the sin replacement that we talked about, Jesus is calling you back to obedience today.

    30:24-30:26

It's time to let Him remove the filth.

    30:28-30:30

    Choose Him every day.

    30:31-30:31

    Amen?

    30:33-30:41

And lastly, know that you are reunited with your Creator now and have the ultimate hope of peace and safety in heaven.

    30:43-30:46

Is there someone that you know who could use that peace?

    30:47-30:53

Can you think of a neighbor to invite under your vine and fig tree, to borrow a phrase?

    30:55-31:02

Instead of letting our sin remove Jesus from our lives, let's live like Jesus removed our sin.

    31:02-31:02

    Amen?

    31:05-31:05

    Pray with me, please.

    31:09-31:13

Lord God, we thank you so much for sending your Son, God.

    31:15-31:27

We thank you that you empowered Jesus to remove our sin, and when he came to earth and died on the cross, Lord, he accomplished that work.

    31:29-31:39

God, I thank you for the freedom, the peace and safety that we have through the exchange of sin for the righteousness of Jesus.

    31:42-32:00

And God, I pray this week and as we move forward in all of our walks with you, God, that we would always be cognizant of that and you would continue to draw us closer and closer to yourself and to draw others to receive that same replacement and that same peace, God.

    32:02-32:05

We give you all the glory and pray this in Jesus' name.

    32:06-32:07

    Amen.

  • 01:47-01:49

So for those of you that don't know, my name is Dan Thompson.

    01:49-01:55

I'm one of the elders here at Harvest and my wife Alicia and I run the Aero Student Ministry.

    01:56-02:05

And it was way back in September that I saw that I would get the opportunity to speak after Pastor Jeff's series on self-control.

    02:05-02:12

And coming off this very serious and sobering set of messages, I thought this was a perfect opportunity for an upbeat sermon, right?

    02:12-02:15

a positive, encouraging message of how God loves us.

    02:16-02:25

And actually, last year, I had already prepared a sermon on the fact that Jesus is going to prepare a place for us, and he's gonna someday come back and bring us there, hopefully very soon.

    02:26-02:26

    So it was perfect.

    02:26-02:32

Pastor Jeff gets to spend the first four weeks of the month being the bad cop, and I get to come in at the end as the good cop.

    02:34-02:35

    But God had other plans.

    02:36-02:45

So he had a different message that he wanted me to share with you this morning, And I could not shake this passage that we're about to look at and its relevance for our time.

    02:46-02:51

So instead of looking at heaven, we are going to look at how we provoke God's anger.

    02:52-02:53

    A nice, feel-good message.

    02:54-02:55

    (Laughter)

    02:55-02:58

So "provoke" is the key word of our passage today.

    02:59-03:02

Now, provoking isn't inherently a negative thing, right?

    03:02-03:05

Books or movies can be thought-provoking.

    03:06-03:16

We've heard way more than we wanted to about how a vaccine can provoke immune response, but most of the time when we think of the word provoke, we think of it as a negative thing.

    03:16-03:19

We think of doing something to make somebody else angry.

    03:20-03:24

Like we think of provoking a wild animal, like this.

    03:26-03:29

Yeah, just not really smart at all to provoke a lion.

    03:30-03:39

But when I think of the word provoke, there is one example that I can think of that surpasses all other types of provoking.

    03:40-03:42

I think of a middle child.

    03:42-03:47

So, my life has been summarized nicely by the birth order book.

    03:48-03:54

I'm the oldest of three boys, born to a mother who's the middle of three girls, and I have three daughters of my own.

    03:54-03:56

So, I know a thing or two about middle children.

    03:57-04:03

And because I'm not a middle child, I will not continue to propagate their lie about how they are always forgotten or ignored.

    04:04-04:06

you know, the Marsha, Marsha, Marsha complex.

    04:08-04:16

But I do know that it is their paranoia of being ignored that is what drives middle children to provoke their siblings and their parents.

    04:17-04:18

    They provoke for attention.

    04:19-04:22

And no middle child will deny this because they recognize this is how they survive.

    04:23-04:26

In my house, it is easy to know where my middle daughter is.

    04:26-04:36

Just listen for the frustrated scream from one of her sisters, "Evie!" And this is the picture that I have in my mind when we read our passes today.

    04:38-04:46

But to be a bit more precise, Webster's definition is to call forth a feeling or action to invite anger.

    04:48-04:49

And this is what we do to God.

    04:50-04:54

Whether intentionally or not, we invite his anger by our actions.

    04:55-05:05

Now, I wanna take a closer look, so turn in your Bibles to Jeremiah 32, And while you're turning there, let's set the background for this passage.

    05:06-05:09

We are at the tail end of the Jewish monarchies.

    05:10-05:21

We're about 400 years after King David, and we are actually in the last days of the very last king, Zedekiah, right before Babylon finishes off Judah for good.

    05:22-05:34

And in fact, for nearly 30 chapters, God has been telling Jeremiah that Babylon, a godless and powerful empire, would destroy the remaining kingdom of Judah and the city of Jerusalem.

    05:36-05:48

And in fact, Jeremiah had been declaring not only God's word against Jerusalem, but he had also been declaring that King Zedekiah would not escape, and that the king himself would be taken in captivity.

    05:49-05:57

And for some reason the king didn't like that very much, so he locked up Jeremiah in prison so he couldn't keep spreading any unfavorable news.

    05:58-06:01

This is how censorship worked before social media.

    06:02-06:08

During chapter 32, Babylon is currently besieging the city of Jerusalem.

    06:08-06:18

And during that siege, while Jeremiah is in jail, God told Jeremiah to buy a field right in the area destroyed by Babylon.

    06:19-06:21

So this was very confusing to Jeremiah.

    06:22-06:24

But try to put yourself in Jeremiah's shoes for a minute.

    06:25-06:58

Imagine that America is under attack from a foreign invader Washington DC is literally surrounded by the enemy who's already ravaged the country and You have been imprisoned because you've been preaching God's Word and in the face of this looming darkness You have been fervently and tearfully on your face before your God looking for a solution and word comes and the word from God that you've anxiously been awaiting for Is that you should invest in that new Ryan Holmes development in Alexandria, Virginia?

    07:00-07:01

    Wait what?

    07:02-09:27

There's national destruction happening spiritual oppression and the solution is real estate. Oh and and make sure you do the paperwork right - Jeremiah is confused as any of us would be So he again goes to God for understanding and he basically says look God I get judgment You you get you've given us this blessing of the promised land But you told us that we had to obey you to stay here and we have repeatedly disobeyed you Even as you continue to offer opportunities for repentance and now the promise judgment has come I get that that totally makes sense. But why in the world am I supposed to buy this field and That's where we pick up God's response to Jeremiah's confusion. So let's begin in verse 26 The Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah behold. I am the Lord the God of all flesh is anything too hard for me Therefore thus says the Lord behold I am giving this city into the hands of the Chaldeans the Babylonians and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar King of Babylon and he shall capture it The Chaldeans who are fighting against this city shall come and set this city on fire and burn it With the houses of the one whose roofs Offerings have been made to bail and drink offerings have been poured out to other gods to provoke me to anger for the children of Israel and the children of Judah have done nothing but evil and there in my sight from their youth and The children of Israel have done nothing but provoke me to anger by the work of their hands declares the Lord This city has aroused my anger and my wrath from the day It was built to this day and so I will remove it from my sight because of all the evil of the children of Israel and and the children of Judah that they did to provoke me to anger their kings and their officials their priests and their prophets the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem they have turned to me their back and not their face and although I have taught them persistently they have not listened to receive instruction they have set up their abominations in the house that is called by my name to defile it so we'll stop there here is our word provoke. It shows up three times in just a few verses. God again confirms, "Oh yeah, that judgment, it's happening and it's deserved." But God also gives us some insight into things that his people do to that provoke his anger. So let's first take a look at the three that are listed here.

    09:28-09:44

Let's look at three ways to provoke God. First way to provoke God is that you turn your back to God, not your face. They have turned to me their back, not their face. That's what it says in verse 33.

    09:45-10:24

I think we all get this image. And if you have a teenager, you really get why this would make somebody mad. Imagine that you work tirelessly for your family to provide for them. And in addition to bringing your children into this world and giving them life, you have given them an amazing place to live. They always have food on the table and extra in the fridge. And you work even to be able to afford luxuries of instant communication and limitless information at your fingertips. Oh, and not just one for you, but individually for every member of your household above a certain age. What should a response to this extravagant luxury be?

    10:25-10:26

I can tell you what it shouldn't look like.

    10:27-10:28

    Wow.

    10:29-10:29

    Thanks.

    10:30-10:33

Last kid in my class to get one, so at least I joined the 21st century.

    10:36-10:37

    I said thanks.

    10:37-10:38

    Are you still here?

    10:39-10:40

    Is the Wi-Fi out?

    10:43-10:47

When you're respectful and grateful, you turn your face toward people.

    10:48-10:52

When you're indifferent towards a person or what they've done to you, you turn your back to them.

    10:54-10:57

And we always start provoking God with our ingratitude.

    10:58-10:58

    Always.

    11:00-11:07

It is a lack of conscious gratitude that will begin the sinful downward spiral that Paul discusses in Romans 1.

    11:10-11:20

"For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him." A little while back, a friend here at church passed this thought exercise on to me.

    11:20-11:32

Imagine if when you woke up today, the only things that you had, all that you had, were the things that you thanked God for yesterday. Would we have a vehicle to get into?

    11:33-11:47

Would we have a job to go to? Would we have our family, our health, a home? Would we have shoes on our feet? Would we have anything at all? Ouch. I fail this exercise every time.

    11:48-11:53

Because our natural tendency is to turn our back toward God, even as the redeemed children of God.

    11:54-11:55

    Gratitude takes work.

    11:56-12:00

And the point is not that we itemize every blessing that God has provided.

    12:00-12:01

It's a matter of our posture.

    12:02-12:04

Are we giving God our back or our face?

    12:06-12:09

We provoke God when we turn our backs to him, not our faces.

    12:10-12:14

Now, which posture sounds more like that of our countries?

    12:15-12:17

Do we give God our faces or our backs?

    12:18-12:23

Now we've all been disgusted by the growing sense of entitlement that seems to pervade America.

    12:24-12:28

We can't even spend hardly one day per year giving thanks.

    12:29-12:31

Let me recap the holiday season we just lived through.

    12:32-12:47

Starts off in October with the "gimme gimme" candy of Halloween, followed by the "gimme gimme" turkey of Thanksgiving dinner, quickly followed and maybe even interrupted by the "gimme gimme" stuff of Black Friday, and to round it all out, it's the gimme gimme presents of Christmas.

    12:50-12:57

And oh, by the way, making sure that at any point through that process, if we have the slightest frustration, we need to broadcast it on all forms of social media.

    12:59-13:03

So yeah, America has decidedly given God our back, not our face.

    13:05-13:07

That's the first way that we provoke God.

    13:07-13:11

The second way that we provoke God is that we ignore God's Word.

    13:12-13:14

Let me finish the rest of verse 33.

    13:15-13:26

It says, "Although I have taught them persistently, "they have not listened to receive instruction." Now I'm not gonna spend a whole lot of time on this, 'cause I imagine how many examples we could talk about here.

    13:26-13:27

But think of your own life.

    13:27-13:30

How many times a day do you fail to obey God's word?

    13:30-13:36

I mean, if we're honest, we know that most of the time, most of our day is not spent listening to God's instruction.

    13:37-13:38

Most of the time we do our own thing.

    13:38-13:40

At best, God's word is an afterthought.

    13:42-13:43

    Again, look at our country.

    13:44-13:46

How well is America obeying God's word?

    13:47-13:50

Well, we've denied that sex is only good in marriage.

    13:50-13:57

We've denied that marriage is only between a man and a woman and we've gone so far to deny the basic construct of man and woman altogether.

    13:58-14:02

I mean, just surf around Netflix for a few minutes and you tell me how well we are listening to God's instruction.

    14:04-14:08

And the problem is, is God's people haven't really performed much better and we know better.

    14:10-14:14

Bible believing and Bible preaching churches are becoming less common with each year.

    14:16-14:17

So why does this provoke God?

    14:18-14:22

Well, for the parents in the room, how frustrating is it when your kids disobey your commands?

    14:23-14:27

For the managers listening, how frustrating is it when your reports ignore your direction?

    14:27-14:31

Teachers, how frustrating is it when your students reject your instruction?

    14:31-14:35

Medical people, how frustrating is it when your patients disregard your expert advice?

    14:36-14:39

Coaches, what about when your team refuses to follow your game plan?

    14:39-15:52

You could go on and on here We all get this when you ignore authority you irritate that authority We provoke God when we ignore God's Word as I said, we could spend all day here. So we're gonna move on The third and final way in this passage and there's many others outside of this passage But the third and final way in this passage to provoke God is to set up your abominations Look at verse 34. They set up their abominations in the house that is called by my name to defile it Now there's a progression with how we provoke God it starts with ingratitude Which ultimately will turn into disobedience and if that disobedience is left unchecked, it's gonna turn into abomination Now when we hear the word abomination come from God's mouth, we should really stop and think about that Because an abomination to God is something he is particularly disgusted by So what are the Israelites actually do? Well, we have to keep reading to find out go back to verse 35 They built the high places of Baal in the valley of the son of Hinnom Stop there So what was a high place?

    15:53-16:07

Well, the high places are places of religious worship most often idol worship and they included things like animal sacrifices burning of incense, your daughters walking through fire, and even human sacrifices.

    16:08-16:14

And the root issue here is that these high places were where gods other than the one true God were worshipped.

    16:15-16:21

And that included Baal, or fertility gods, or gods of the Sun, or the Moon, or the constellation, and many others.

    16:22-16:23

But we don't have that issue today, do we?

    16:25-16:33

Most of us aren't going somewhere to offer incense to a little statue. I mean, I did see a lot of that in Thailand, But in America, we don't really have to worry about that, do we?

    16:34-16:39

Well, we may not have as much statue worship today, but we definitely have our high places.

    16:41-16:43

Have you set up a high place for technology?

    16:44-16:47

Do you worship at the altar of the almighty cell phone?

    16:49-16:51

What about entertainment? How's your living room set up?

    16:52-16:57

Do you have a high place to religiously keep up with your shows no matter how much trash they shove into a season?

    16:58-17:00

    Here's one. What about safety?

    17:01-17:05

Safety and health may have the most loyal worshipers in these pandemic days.

    17:06-17:10

What level of sacrifice of our children are we willing to make in the name of health and safety?

    17:12-17:18

Have we made them walk through the fire of vaccination, virtual learning, masking, and all other manner of emotional trauma over the past two years?

    17:20-17:24

We might not have deified pillars at our high places, but we certainly have our share of them.

    17:25-17:32

Just look, if you want to know where a high place is, Just look at the area where people lose their mind when you take something away.

    17:33-17:33

    That's a high place.

    17:35-17:39

And the last part of verse 35 seems to list the worst of all.

    17:41-17:53

And they offered up their sons and daughters to Molech, though I did not command them, nor did it enter in my mind that they should do this abomination to cause Judah to sin.

    17:55-17:58

If you're not uncomfortable yet, We're gonna get there real quick.

    17:59-18:00

So what's going on with this?

    18:01-18:05

Well, there's much debate about who or what Molech is.

    18:05-18:06

So let's not worry about that.

    18:07-18:21

The important thing to know is that the Israelites had so perverted God's interpretation of life that they, instead of thanking God for the blessing of their children, they offered them as sacrifices to foreign gods.

    18:22-18:27

They would basically burn their firstborn at the garbage dump to avoid some ominous future.

    18:29-18:32

So this is pretty horrific, right?

    18:33-18:40

In fact, it's so horrific that in our civilized day, even the most permissive person would never stand for this kind of barbarism.

    18:41-18:44

Have we finally reached the limit of the evil of our age?

    18:46-18:46

    Tragically, no.

    18:47-18:48

This is not our limit either.

    18:50-18:53

Let me ask you this, what exactly is an abortion?

    18:55-19:01

Not gonna go into the graphic details of it, but as science has made clearer and clearer, life begins at conception.

    19:02-19:06

So abortion is the killing of a child, and often the would-have-been firstborn child.

    19:08-19:09

But that's not really child sacrifice, is it?

    19:11-19:14

What are the reasons that our country allows abortion?

    19:15-19:16

Is it in the name of freedom?

    19:17-19:18

    Is it economic?

    19:19-19:20

Is it to protect a reputation?

    19:21-19:22

Is it to avoid some ominous future?

    19:22-19:23

    Is it for a career?

    19:23-19:25

    Is it simply for inconvenience?

    19:27-19:33

If you are willing to look in the face of abortion, you will find some striking resemblances to offering children to Molech.

    19:35-19:36

    And don't miss this point.

    19:37-19:39

    What actually provokes God here?

    19:40-19:43

I mean, all of us get that evil actions should be punished.

    19:44-19:45

This part of justice we're all on board with.

    19:46-20:21

And many of us presume that we have our hands clean of abortion. So we don't have objections to punishment coming to those who participate in, advocate for, or encourage abortion. But when it comes to abominations, God isn't so targeted in his judgment. When it comes to abominations, these actions are so contrary to God's character, so contrary to the image of God in which we were made. So when it comes to abomination, God those that are directly linked to this evil.

    20:22-20:26

But we are to fight for a world where these abominations are no more.

    20:28-20:31

Do you care that abortion is not only legal but celebrated?

    20:32-20:35

Do you care how prevalent abortion actually is?

    20:35-20:45

Kerry gave us the stat for Pittsburgh, but even by the most conservative rates, by the end of this sermon, there will have been enough abortions in this country to wipe out two to three kindergarten classes.

    20:47-20:56

Do we care that our medical progress is bolstered by abortion, that many vaccines and treatments are developed or manufactured using cell lines from abortions?

    20:56-20:59

All the COVID vaccines that are currently approved are stained by abortion.

    21:00-21:03

How many of our children will we sacrifice for the safety of our society?

    21:05-21:18

Do we care that our culture promotes a demonic parody of human dignity, that we will celebrate any and every kind of sexual perversion, But if it's figured out that your child in the womb has Down syndrome, it's time to terminate that pregnancy?

    21:20-21:27

Do we care that we describe this abomination in such callous terms like terminating a pregnancy, reproductive rights, or family planning services?

    21:29-21:32

Do we care for these mothers and fathers who are killing their own children?

    21:33-21:42

Do we care for the doctors, staff, and a world around us that's so warped in their thinking that they would allow this abomination to continue?

    21:43-21:46

I don't think we care. We don't care enough anyway.

    21:48-21:57

The first time that the Bible talks about sacrificing children to Molech appears in Leviticus 20, when God is giving Israel the laws concerning holiness and purity.

    21:58-22:07

And he uses an interesting phrase. He says, "If the people of the land do at all close their eyes to that man," when he gives one of his children to Molech.

    22:08-22:13

God calls out the people if they at all close their eyes to this great evil.

    22:14-22:35

What does this mean? It means that we cannot see this abomination and do nothing. We have to take action against the evil. We don't have authority to take action against the evildoers. That's for God to deal with, preferably through the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ. But we cannot close our eyes to such great evil and expect God to do nothing.

    22:37-22:41

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a pastor in Germany during the rise of Hitler.

    22:41-22:48

He stood as one of the very rare voices in the German churches who spoke against Hitler and his treatment of the Jews.

    22:49-22:56

And he was not just a voice against the Nazis, but he actually was hanged because of his involvement in an attempt to assassinate Hitler.

    22:57-23:05

And he is attributed with saying this quote, "Silence in the face of evil is evil, is itself evil." God will not hold us guiltless.

    23:06-23:08

Not to speak is to speak.

    23:09-23:11

Not to act is to act.

    23:12-23:17

In America alone, abortion has exceeded the death count of 10 holocausts.

    23:18-23:19

    That's plenty of provoking God.

    23:20-23:25

So unfortunately, our situation may be more similar to Judah's in Jeremiah 32.

    23:27-23:33

And if listening to this makes you uncomfortable, remember abortion is just one of many abominations that go on in our country.

    23:35-23:38

And all this was just a really long introduction to the real message.

    23:39-23:43

So now let's look at God's response when we provoke Him.

    23:45-23:49

The first response God has when we provoke Him is that we reap what we sow.

    23:50-23:52

    Let me read verse 36.

    23:53-24:08

Now therefore thus says the Lord the God of Israel concerning this city of which you say it is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by pestilence." Throughout this chapter, God has confirmed that this disaster is happening.

    24:09-24:13

God has told them for 30 chapters that Babylon is coming to bring God's judgment.

    24:14-24:17

He's repeatedly offered them chances to repent through Jeremiah and others.

    24:18-24:22

And most of the time, their response is to kill the messengers or to jail them.

    24:23-24:26

So when we provoke God, there are consequences for that.

    24:27-24:51

Galatians 6, 7 says, "Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. For whatever one sows, that he will also reap." This is a simple principle to understand, right? When you plant corn, you're gonna get corn. When you plant watermelon seeds, you'll get watermelons. When you plant garbanzo beans, you'll get... wait, you get chickpeas?

    24:52-24:55

I did the same thing, just in case you didn't know that.

    24:57-24:58

    This principle is always true.

    24:59-25:04

Whatever you plant or sow, you will reap the fruit of that plant, assuming that it grows.

    25:05-25:09

You should never expect to plant a pumpkin and magically get lima beans.

    25:09-25:10

    It's just not happening.

    25:11-25:14

But this simple farming principle is true in all of life.

    25:15-25:21

If you spend time practicing the piano, you're going to get better at playing the piano, not necessarily better at cooking.

    25:22-25:27

If you spend time training as a police officer, you'll become a better officer, but not necessarily a better accountant.

    25:28-25:30

And just like in farming, success isn't guaranteed either.

    25:30-25:33

Practicing the piano doesn't mean you're going to be the next Mozart.

    25:33-25:36

But what is guaranteed is that you plant and harvest in kind.

    25:37-25:40

You sow and reap the same kinds of things.

    25:40-25:43

This is true for good things, and it's true for bad things.

    25:43-25:47

If you sow lies, then you will eventually reap the consequences for lying.

    25:48-25:55

Like Pastor Jeff talked about this month, if you sow sexual immorality, you will reap the many consequences for those decisions.

    25:56-26:00

This principle is true for us as individuals, but it's also true for nations.

    26:01-26:07

If a nation sows generosity with its neighbors, then it's likely going to reap allies in a time of need.

    26:08-26:16

But if a nation sows corrupt dealings and steals intellectual property from its other nations, then it's likely going to reap enemies or at least trade restrictions.

    26:17-26:26

And if a nation calls out to God for repentance and seeks to be righteous and value people, then it will reap God's forgiveness and blessings.

    26:27-26:39

But if a nation promotes that man is a cosmic accident, an upright walking animal, then the nation will reap an identity where individuals have no value and where instinctual sexual urges go completely unchecked.

    26:40-26:47

Now for Israel, this meant that their decision to sow godlessness brought judgment in the form of godless Babylon.

    26:48-26:54

Their decision to be ungrateful for the promised land that God had given them led them to be exiled from it.

    26:55-27:06

For us, for our sins as individuals and as a nation, I don't know for certain what the harvest will look like, but remember, it's insanity to think that you'll get corn by planting watermelon seeds.

    27:07-27:08

    Don't be deceived.

    27:08-27:10

    God is not mocked.

    27:10-27:13

When we provoke God, we reap what we sow.

    27:14-27:19

But thankfully, God has a second response when we provoke Him.

    27:20-27:26

The other response that God has provided when we provoke Him is that God redeems what we reap.

    27:27-27:28

Let me continue with verse 37.

    27:29-27:49

"Behold, I will gather them from all the countries with which I drove them in my anger and my wrath and in great indignation, and I will bring them back this place and I will make them dwell in safety." God loves to be a rescuer. He is the master of letting things play out to their worst and then coming in in the clutch. Right, Matt?

    27:50-28:07

This is his grace. There is no question that we deserve what we reap, but because of his love for us, God wants to redeem the disasters that we've made for ourselves. How can this happen? Well, For example, God can heal the wounds left on people by abortion.

    28:08-28:10

Complete redemption is available to all affected.

    28:11-28:16

The women, the men, the doctors, and even a director of a Planned Parenthood clinic.

    28:17-28:21

That's the story of Abby Johnson, who left the abortion industry to become a pro-life advocate.

    28:23-28:31

Or as another example, God may allow a man to persist in sexual immorality to the point where he gets caught and nearly destroys his marriage.

    28:31-28:36

But God is able to give him a repentant heart to seek reconciliation with his wife.

    28:36-28:41

And God is able to pour out grace to his wife that allows her to forgive the unforgivable.

    28:42-28:45

And the end result is a strong marriage forged by God's redeeming grace.

    28:47-28:52

Or as the ultimate example, God allowed envious religious leaders to murder his only son.

    28:54-29:00

But God used the death of Christ as the victory over sin and death, saving us from the judgment we all deserve.

    29:01-29:03

This redemption can happen for a nation as well.

    29:04-29:09

For Israel, it was the promise that God would bring them back to the promised land, which He has clearly done in our day.

    29:10-29:15

I don't know what it might mean for America, but it does give me hope for our country.

    29:16-29:20

Until we are no more, God is always able to redeem our position, no matter how disastrous.

    29:21-29:24

God specializes in resurrecting dead things.

    29:24-30:31

In fact, this is how He even starts in verse 27, "Is anything too hard for me? No." first response, reaping what we sow, that's guaranteed to all. It doesn't matter who you are. But the second response of God's redemption, that's not guaranteed to everybody. Now you hear people say everything happens for a reason and that's true. And in the church we like to quote Romans 8 which says, "We know that all things work together for good." But it doesn't really say that. It says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. God offers redemption to everyone and to anybody, but his promise to redeem what we have reaped is based on our response to his love. If we don't love God, then we are left to reap what we have sown. So how do we know if we love God? Well, it comes down to our response for his offer of redemption. So finally and quickly, let's Let's look at our response to God's response.

    30:32-30:34

Let me read the last few verses.

    30:36-30:39

"And they shall be My people, and I will be their God.

    30:39-30:46

And I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me forever for their own good and the good of their children after them.

    30:47-30:51

I will make with them an everlasting covenant, and I will not turn away from doing good to them.

    30:52-30:57

And I will put the fear of Me in their hearts that they may not turn from Me, and I will rejoice in doing good.

    30:58-31:03

and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness with all my heart and all my soul.

    31:04-31:18

For thus says the Lord, just as I have brought this great disaster upon this people, so I will bring upon them all the good that I promised them." Our response to God's response is to first be His people.

    31:20-31:24

And for us to be His people, we must have His heart and follow His way.

    31:26-31:28

We must stop doing the things that provoke him.

    31:28-31:33

We must be grateful for all that he has provided and remind other people to be grateful as well.

    31:34-31:38

We must obey his instruction and teach others his word.

    31:40-31:43

And we must fight for a world where these abominations are no more.

    31:45-31:53

Now I hope that it means for us that we will partner with organizations like Choices who seek to give these hurting parents a real choice against killing their own children.

    31:54-31:58

And I hope it causes us to stand up against other evils that we see in our land.

    31:59-32:04

I hope we will stand and speak against all of the abominations that provoke him to anger.

    32:05-32:09

I hope that we sow a different kind of seed to reap a different kind of harvest.

    32:10-32:12

We first need to be his people.

    32:13-32:17

Now Jesus has called us to be light in this dark world.

    32:18-32:20

But the thing about darkness is that it can't grow on its own.

    32:21-32:23

Darkness only grows when the light gets dimmer.

    32:24-32:26

So be the light and be his people.

    32:28-32:33

And finally, our second response to God's response is to buy the field.

    32:35-32:41

This whole chapter started because God told Jeremiah to buy a field during a time when it made no sense to do so.

    32:42-32:54

God's answer to Jeremiah's confusion is for Jeremiah to see past the dark circumstances, the hope in God's promise of redemption, to trust and obey even when we don't understand.

    32:56-33:00

Now the final verses speak of being planted in the land because of the good that God plans to do.

    33:01-33:04

Now this specific covenant was for Israel, and America is not Israel.

    33:05-33:12

And God ultimately fulfilled the covenant by offering us his son, Jesus, as our redemption and the hope for mankind.

    33:13-33:17

but the principle for Jeremiah and for us remains true.

    33:18-33:20

God commands us to be planted where He has called us.

    33:21-33:23

He calls us to buy the field.

    33:24-33:29

He wants us to seek the prosperity of the land around us even as disaster looms.

    33:30-33:38

We cannot be like Jonah sitting on the hillside awaiting fire to fall from heaven on the godless people who deserve judgment.

    33:38-33:40

We must instead buy the field.

    33:42-33:46

and invest in the people around us who need redemption as badly as we do.

    33:47-33:51

In addition to calling us to be light, Jesus called us to be salt.

    33:52-33:53

    And salt is a preservative.

    33:53-33:55

It helps to slow down the decay.

    33:56-34:00

No, it can't stop the decay, but it certainly can delay it.

    34:01-34:02

We have to be salt in this world.

    34:03-34:04

We have to try to slow the decay.

    34:05-34:39

We have to buy the field and invest in the good of the land around us God and to trust Him. Yes, as believers, we look forward to heaven more than the concerns of this world. That is true. But until we get to heaven, we have a job to do here. So be His people and by the field. Let's pray. God, I thank you. I thank you that you love us, God. God, we deserve so much, so much disaster and destruction that we've made for ourselves.

    34:39-34:44

And I know me as a impatient person, I would say, fine, if that's what you want, have at it.

    34:45-34:46

    But not you, God.

    34:47-34:49

    God, you're patient and loving.

    34:50-35:05

And you give us opportunity to not only be forgiven, not only avoid the disaster that is coming, but you give us the opportunity to be your hands and feet and help to fix it.

    35:06-35:11

God, you offer us an opportunity to partner with you, to be redeemers like you are.

    35:13-35:14

And God, I pray that we would do that.

    35:15-35:16

God, I pray that we would be your people.

    35:17-35:19

God, I pray that we would buy the field.

    35:20-35:30

I thank you that you are with us in all of that, strengthening us and equipping us to do the things that are hard, to do the things that look so much bigger than what we can do as one person.

    35:31-35:34

But I pray that we would be your people and buy the field.

    35:36-35:39

Thank you for all that you're doing, and I pray that you are blessed by this service.

    35:39-35:40

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Open up your Bibles to 1 Corinthians 9.

    00:46-00:56

As we conclude our series, 1 Corinthians 9, and as the analogy goes as we're talking about sex, sex is like fire.

    00:58-01:04

Fire in the fireplace is beautiful, and it's warm, and it's appropriate.

    01:06-01:12

The fire in the middle of the floor is destructive, right?

    01:13-01:15

In its right place, it's beautiful.

    01:15-01:17

In its wrong place, it's destructive.

    01:17-01:23

And as we talk about issues of sexuality, it's the exact same story.

    01:26-01:29

Because sex in the right place is beautiful and appropriate.

    01:32-01:36

but in the wrong place, it is destructive.

    01:39-01:42

And over these past few weeks, we started talking about David.

    01:44-01:47

We saw how we too fall into sin and temptation.

    01:48-01:55

And also from David's life, we saw the terrible and permanent consequences that we're going to face.

    01:57-02:08

And last week, we sought God's Word for a holy motivation, and we saw that intimacy is for those in the covenant, right?

    02:10-02:26

Just as God desires a close relationship with us, which has been provided through the covenant of Jesus Christ's blood, He calls us into covenant with our spouse, and it is in that context that we are to share intimacy.

    02:28-02:35

So in 1 Corinthians 9, We're getting to a very familiar analogy to the Corinthians.

    02:37-02:39

We're talking about running a race.

    02:41-02:46

And for the Corinthians, the "iths, meansn" games - I've been practicing always saying this.

    02:47-02:50

"Iths, meann." Hang on, let me take another run at that.

    02:59-03:02

"Iths, meann." "Do you have to say it with that accent?

    03:02-03:10

"I think I do." The It's Mean Games, okay, it was like the Olympics, all right, all that practicing for nothing.

    03:11-03:20

Every three years, they had their Olympic games, and these athletes had to take an oath that for 10 months, they were gonna train.

    03:23-03:29

An oath to do this, and also during that time, they were going to abstain from eating anything that they were not supposed to eat.

    03:30-03:31

    Alright?

    03:31-03:36

So, Paul uses this analogy to say our life is like that race.

    03:37-03:42

We need to run in such a way that we are going to be useful to God.

    03:46-03:54

Specifically here, the application point Paul makes is we need to be willing to be self-controlled and give up anything that might hinder your race.

    03:56-03:57

    Hear me church.

    03:58-04:02

Nothing will hinder your race like sexual sin.

    04:05-04:09

Sexual sin will sap your spiritual vitality.

    04:10-04:12

    Sexual sin will destroy families.

    04:14-04:16

And sexual sin will ruin your testimony.

    04:16-04:21

So as we talk about self-control, this is top of the pile.

    04:22-04:24

    Areas where we need self-control.

    04:24-04:28

So using the race metaphor, we have some principles here.

    04:28-04:38

So on your outline, if you're taking notes, and I always encourage you to do so, this is how to get self-controlled.

    04:39-04:41

    Number one, jot this down.

    04:42-04:44

You must choose to be self-controlled.

    04:45-04:46

    Look at verse 24.

    04:48-04:57

Paul says, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "Do you not know that in a race, All the runners run, but only one receives the prize.

    04:58-05:00

So run that you may obtain it.

    05:03-05:13

Now the Greek race had one winner, but Paul is pointing out here that this prize is open to everyone because it's your own race.

    05:13-05:14

You're not competing with anyone here.

    05:16-05:24

Your race for your walk with Christ and your purity and your self-control, you're not competing.

    05:28-05:28

    This is your own race.

    05:29-05:37

Then Paul says, "Run that you may obtain it." That seems kind of obvious, doesn't it?

    05:37-06:10

He says you have to run, wrap your brain around this profound truth, you have to run like you're trying to win and you're like okay hang on a second hang on to who who shows up at the race day of event competition who shows up to compete and doesn't even try and the answer is a lot of people You're like, "What do I mean?" Here's what I mean.

    06:13-06:14

We're going to be brutally honest.

    06:17-06:19

I hear people use this phrase a lot.

    06:19-06:26

They say, "You know, I'm struggling with pornography." I'm struggling with pornography.

    06:26-06:30

And that phrase isn't exactly true.

    06:32-06:36

struggling implies that there's an actual fight going on.

    06:39-06:45

The truth is, for many people, there isn't really a struggle.

    06:49-06:58

In other words, you come to my office and you're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, I'm struggling with pornography." And I'm like, "Alright, we're going to be completely honest.

    06:58-07:00

I want you to sit down and I want you to break it down for me.

    07:01-07:05

be exactly what is going on between you and pornography.

    07:06-07:09

Like I watch it every day.

    07:11-07:12

    That's not a struggle.

    07:14-07:18

Just doing it in no way suggests there's any effort for self-control.

    07:20-07:25

And that's why as Paul talks about self-control, that's why it has to start here.

    07:25-07:26

You have to make the choice.

    07:27-07:49

He says, "So run that you may obtain it." up trying. So many people who are struggling with saying you're not struggling, you're losing is what you're doing. You're not putting forth any kind of effort. And if you're going to have self-control, it has to start here, where you say, you know, I'm going to win.

    07:49-08:32

I am not okay with living in defeat anymore. This ends right now. I'm showing up to this race, then I'm going to win the race. That's where you have to start. Secondly, you must be committed to self-control in every area. Look at his analogy. Look at the first sentence in verse 25. It says, "Every athlete exercises self-control in all things." Underline in In other words, when it comes to self-control, church, this isn't for some Christians and not others.

    08:33-08:34

Like, "Yeah, we talk about self-control.

    08:34-08:44

It's really important that preachers and missionaries get this stuff down." No. All athletes, all Christians need self-control.

    08:45-08:48

You're like, "Okay, in what area?" Well, he tells us. Do you see this?

    08:49-08:51

Exercise of self-control in what things?

    08:52-08:53

Say it. Come on, come on, say it.

    08:54-08:58

All things, every area, every area.

    09:00-09:01

    Like take the athlete analogy.

    09:03-09:10

If you're going to be an effective athlete, you need to be effective top three areas for sure.

    09:12-09:18

And that is diet and training and practicing, right?

    09:20-09:21

You have to be eating right.

    09:22-09:29

You have to make sure your body is physically fit and you have to practice the sport in which you compete.

    09:29-09:31

And if that athlete says, you know what?

    09:34-09:36

I'm kind of with meatloaf on this, rest in peace.

    09:36-09:38

I'm with meatloaf, the two out of three ain't bad.

    09:38-09:44

I'm gonna work on diet and I'm gonna work on training, but I'm never gonna show up to practice.

    09:45-09:46

Is that athlete gonna be very effective?

    09:47-09:47

    No.

    09:49-09:49

    No.

    09:50-09:57

"Well, I train real hard and I never miss practice." I'm gonna be honest with you, I eat garbage all the time.

    09:57-09:58

Is that athlete gonna be effective?

    09:59-10:04

No, he has to be disciplined in every area.

    10:04-10:05

And it's the same with Christians.

    10:06-10:07

Two out of three is not gonna work.

    10:09-10:15

Every area of life, he gets, "Well, I don't drink "and I don't cuss, but I do look at pornography sometimes.

    10:16-10:19

"So two out of three ain't bad." He says all areas.

    10:20-10:23

    Exercise self-control in all things.

    10:26-10:29

When we talk about self-control, here's a question we have to answer.

    10:32-10:36

Is self-control something that I'm responsible for, or is it something that the Lord empowers?

    10:38-10:43

Is self-control something that I'm responsible for, or is it something that the Lord empowers?

    10:44-10:45

    And the answer is yes.

    10:46-10:46

    Write this down.

    10:49-10:50

    Self-control is a team effort.

    10:54-10:56

And I can show you both of these truths biblically.

    10:56-10:59

First of all, self-control is a command to be obeyed.

    11:01-11:03

    2 Peter 1.

    11:05-11:16

"For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control." He says, and I studied this, "Make every effort" in the Greek means to make every effort.

    11:16-11:26

for the maximum effort to supplement your faith with, and he gives a list of things, but one of them is self-control.

    11:26-11:37

You have to do everything in your power to go after self-control, but it doesn't happen solely by your power.

    11:37-11:39

The Bible says it's the fruit of the Spirit, right?

    11:39-11:48

Galatians 5.22 and 23 says, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

    11:48-11:54

Not last and least, okay, but it is a fruit of the Spirit.

    11:56-11:58

You're called to partner with God on this.

    11:59-12:02

He calls you to it and empowers you to do it.

    12:04-12:13

And I have to emphasize this because this is where Christians get all messed up when it comes to discipline and it comes to dependence.

    12:14-12:17

We have this tendency to emphasize one over the other.

    12:18-12:20

And when you do that, you will not have self-control.

    12:23-12:24

You're like, what do you mean?

    12:24-12:24

    Here's what I mean.

    12:25-12:29

Some Christians only emphasize the discipline, the my responsibility part.

    12:30-12:33

They try to run and regulate every single thing in their lives.

    12:34-12:35

    Like military, right?

    12:35-12:42

Like I'm gonna be so disciplined in every single area, every minute accounted for, every penny accounted for.

    12:42-12:48

I'm gonna be so disciplined and I'm going to run everything, and they have no dependence on God's Holy Spirit.

    12:48-12:50

You know what happens to those people?

    12:50-12:56

They end up discouraged, because you cannot keep up that level of discipline indefinitely.

    12:57-13:04

You're going to fail, and your failure is going to reflect on you, and you're going to feel like, I can't do it, I never could do it.

    13:05-13:05

    You're going to be discouraged.

    13:07-13:12

But some, just go entirely on dependence.

    13:12-13:14

You let go and you let God.

    13:15-13:17

    I'm sort of on autopilot.

    13:17-13:19

    God does everything.

    13:19-13:22

I don't need to worry about spiritual disciplines.

    13:22-13:24

You know what ends up to those people?

    13:24-13:25

    They end up defeated.

    13:27-13:28

    They end up defeated.

    13:29-13:32

So when it comes to, is it man's choice or is it God's empowerment?

    13:33-13:35

It's not either or, it's both and.

    13:37-13:43

You know, it would be like, You know, last week we got that big dump of snow, right?

    13:44-13:54

Well, imagine you go out to clean your driveway and somebody dropped off for you the biggest, best, state-of-the-art snowblower on the market.

    13:55-14:09

You're like, "It's yours, enjoy." If you decide that you're not going to use the snowblower, but you're gonna dig out your driveway by hand, you're gonna get frustrated.

    14:11-14:12

And you're going to get worn out.

    14:13-14:15

And you're going to see how ineffective you are.

    14:16-14:22

And that thing, though it has all the power in the world, it's not doing you any good just sitting there not being used.

    14:24-14:32

So when you take the thing and use it, you see it's providing the power, but you're making the choice to use the power it's been giving you.

    14:33-14:33

    You see?

    14:34-14:35

    You understand the picture.

    14:37-14:40

Because when you do, you understand how all this works with self-control.

    14:41-14:43

You see, God has given you the resource.

    14:44-14:49

God says, "I'm giving you self-control, now it's up to you to use the gift that I have given you.

    14:50-14:55

It's not going to be effective unless you use it." In every area.

    14:57-14:58

    In every area.

    14:59-15:00

That's what Paul points out here.

    15:01-15:03

    Self-control in all things.

    15:03-15:06

You're never going to succeed anywhere in life.

    15:07-15:10

Not in your marriage, not at work, not at school.

    15:11-15:13

Definitely not in the area of sexuality.

    15:14-15:21

You're never going to succeed without going after self-control the way God has provided.

    15:24-15:26

Number three, how to get self-controlled.

    15:27-15:28

You have to choose to be self-controlled.

    15:28-15:30

You must be committed to self-control in every area.

    15:30-15:33

Number three, write this down, you must keep your eyes on the prize.

    15:36-15:37

Look at the rest of verse 25.

    15:39-15:41

He says, "Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.

    15:42-15:50

They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable." Stop there.

    15:51-16:00

The Greeks, they exercised all that self-control, and they restricted their diet, and they went through all that training.

    16:00-16:01

Do you know what they won?

    16:02-16:03

    You know what they won?

    16:04-16:08

They won a pine wreath to wear on their heads.

    16:09-16:10

    That was the prize.

    16:13-16:13

    Yay!

    16:14-16:21

You go home and you put that thing on your mantel and you better show it to your friends quick because it's going to crumble into dust in a week.

    16:22-16:22

You know what I'm talking about?

    16:23-16:24

    And that's Paul's point.

    16:24-16:30

He said they did all this work and all this effort to get this thing that's going to crumble.

    16:31-16:39

He says, "But we do it for an unfading crown, an imperishable crown." You're like, "Well, what's the crown?

    16:39-16:46

What is the crown?" Well, according to 2 Timothy 4.8, it's a crown of righteousness.

    16:46-16:49

According to Revelation 2.10, it's the crown of life.

    16:50-16:53

According to 1 Peter 5.4, it's a crown of glory.

    16:56-16:58

And you're like, "Well, what does that mean, Pastor Jeff?

    16:58-17:01

Is it like a stack of crowns on your head?

    17:01-17:04

Or is it like one crown with all these facets?

    17:04-17:17

And I'm going to be honest with you, I didn't think that far about it because I couldn't get over the fact that the Bible says that the King of Heaven is going to put a crown on me.

    17:18-17:20

I can't wrap my brain around that.

    17:21-17:31

The day is going to come that the Lord of everything, The One who is sovereign and almighty over everything is going to crown His people?

    17:35-17:37

    I don't get it.

    17:37-17:39

    I mean, I believe it.

    17:41-17:51

You know, anticipating that glorious day, that motivates me to self-control today.

    17:54-17:56

    Paul's using the athlete analogy.

    17:58-18:00

    Every athlete gets this, right?

    18:02-18:07

Everybody that's in the NHL right now, when they were a kid, what did they imagine?

    18:09-18:09

    What did they imagine?

    18:09-18:10

    What were they thinking about?

    18:10-18:11

    What were they dreaming?

    18:12-18:12

    Someday, right?

    18:13-18:14

    Lifting up the cup.

    18:15-18:16

    That's all they thought.

    18:16-18:17

    That's what drove them.

    18:17-18:17

    I can't wait.

    18:18-18:21

Someday I'm going to lift up the Stanley Cup, right?

    18:23-18:26

Every football player, "Someday I'm going to get that Lombardi.

    18:28-18:42

Going to get that Lombardi." Everybody that plays for the Pirates, "Someday I'm going to win a game." I'm sorry, that wasn't in my notes, nor was it nice.

    18:43-18:46

Every boxer, "I'm going to get the belt, right?

    18:46-18:48

I'm going to get the belt.

    18:49-18:51

I'm going to be heavyweight champion.

    18:53-19:00

All of the training, all of the hard work, all of the self-control to bask in that moment of glory.

    19:02-19:11

And on that day, on that day, you're going to be crowned by the king.

    19:13-19:22

on that day you're fully going to realize it was all worth it. It was all worth it.

    19:25-19:41

Jesus, you were worth it. Every time I said no to sin, every time I used the self-control that you gave me in order that I might be an imitator of Christ as as the Bible called me to be.

    19:41-19:53

Every time I used self-control, and there were a lot of times my flesh didn't want it, but every time I said no to sin, it was all worth it.

    19:55-19:58

The victory celebration is coming soon.

    19:58-19:59

Keep your eyes on the prize.

    20:00-20:01

    Keep control of yourself.

    20:03-20:12

And fourthly, write this down, have a plan to win. You must have a plan to win.

    20:15-21:28

He says, "So I do not run aimlessly. I do not box as one beating the air." Stop there for a second. He says, "I do not run aimlessly." in a race you have to have a clear track and you have to have a clear finish line and in order to win you have to stay on track and he says I do not run aimlessly I mean it's obvious right you don't show up at the day of the track meet you get your little track shoes on your track shoes you get your little track shorts you're ready to run and you just start running like through the concession area you're like this is where I run like no I'm gonna run through the stands like what are you doing like the track is down here if there's no track and there's no finish line you're not really gonna put forth any kind of effort and you're never going to have victory that's why That's why he says you've got to have a plan to win.

    21:31-21:40

Now listen, because when we talk about self-control, I think our minds immediately go someplace.

    21:42-21:45

This is what self-control is, but you've got to hear this.

    21:46-21:53

Self-control isn't just being ready to do the right thing in the moment of temptation.

    21:56-21:58

That's what some people think self-control is.

    21:59-22:09

When the moment of temptation appears before me, God's Holy Spirit is going to give me the power of self-control.

    22:09-22:14

And listen, it can't be just that.

    22:17-22:18

    Here's what I mean.

    22:21-22:33

mostly happens before the moment of temptation. I want you to think about this.

    22:36-22:48

Self-control happens, mostly happens, before the moment of temptation, not just at the moment of temptation.

    22:51-22:58

You're like, "What do you mean by that?" I mean, by using the athlete analogy here, athletes train ahead of time, don't they?

    23:01-23:13

You know, the athlete didn't show up to the race going, "Boy, I can't wait to run this race today, because I'm going to be honest with you, I'm a little out of shape, and I think running this race today is going to get me in shape." He doesn't have that mindset.

    23:13-23:15

If he has that mindset, he's already lost.

    23:17-23:19

    The training happens before.

    23:20-23:25

The hard work, the discipline, the self-control, all of that happens before game time.

    23:25-23:37

And in the same way, self-control, when it comes to the area of sexual sin, self-control must be done before temptation shows up.

    23:40-23:42

I mean decisions must be made ahead of time.

    23:44-23:45

I'm not going to go to that place.

    23:46-23:49

I know I'm weak when I go to that place, and I'm not going to go to that place.

    23:49-23:57

I'm not going to allow myself to have any idle time online where I might be tempted to look at something that I shouldn't be looking at online.

    23:57-23:59

You're making decisions ahead of time.

    24:01-24:03

Fences must be built ahead of time.

    24:04-24:06

I'm not going to allow myself to be alone with that woman.

    24:09-24:13

I'm just not going to put myself in the position where I might possibly be tempted.

    24:13-24:15

I gotta build that fence ahead of time.

    24:16-24:17

    That's self-control.

    24:20-24:22

Disciplines must be honed ahead of time.

    24:22-24:25

I'm making prayer the priority today.

    24:25-24:31

I'm making the meditation on the word of God the absolute thing that I'm focusing on today.

    24:32-24:39

First thing in the morning, not trying to recall a verse at the right time.

    24:41-24:42

    ahead of time.

    24:45-24:45

    Ahead of time.

    24:47-24:54

It's like the analogy I've shared with you before if we can get away from athletics for a minute. Let's talk about dogs. I've shared this with you before.

    24:55-24:57

But the man that had the two dogs, right?

    24:59-25:02

He had a white dog and he had a black dog. Don't make this about race. Okay?

    25:04-25:14

White represents light. Black represents darkness, dogs don't have races. Do I need to start over? Some of you look confused.

    25:16-25:38

Some of you are very uncomfortable. We're not talking about races, we're talking about fur color. All right? So this guy had two dogs and every time he fed them the black dog overpowered the white dog and got all of the food and over time the white dog, because it wasn't eating, was getting weaker and weaker and weaker and the black dog who was getting food was getting stronger and stronger and stronger.

    25:38-25:41

So the fight was more and more and more lopsided.

    25:42-25:48

And the owner of the dog says, "I gotta do something about this." So what he did was he leashed both dogs.

    25:48-25:51

And for a season, he only fed the white dog.

    25:53-25:56

And he gave the black dog just enough food to get by.

    25:56-25:59

Don't call PETA, it's not a real story, it's an analogy.

    26:01-26:07

All right, so he fed the white dog the best and healthiest and most nutritious food, the black dog just enough to get by.

    26:07-26:10

And over time, the white dog got stronger and stronger and then the black dog got weaker and weaker.

    26:10-26:18

And then when he let them off the leash and set the food down, the white dog at this point was able to overpower the black dog and get the food.

    26:19-26:21

And the point of that analogy is simple, right?

    26:22-26:25

The dog that you feed is going to be the dominant dog.

    26:27-26:52

Meaning this, if you're constantly feeding lust, looking at images online, watching movies that incite that, having conversations about that subject matter. Do you know what you do every time you do that? Is you're feeding the black dog and you're making it stronger and stronger and then you wonder why does lust have such control over my life?

    26:52-27:01

Because that's the dog you've been feeding all this time. That's why it has such dominance in your life. But if you will be self-controlled and just feed Feed the white dog.

    27:02-27:20

Going after God's Word, memorizing and meditating the applicable and appropriate Scriptures, and spending time with God's people in prayer, accountability, going after the things that lead to Christ's likeness.

    27:20-27:21

    That's feeding the white dog.

    27:22-27:25

And you're going to find over time that that's going to be the dog that's stronger.

    27:29-27:33

Self-control is feeding the white dog.

    27:35-27:36

    That's the plan.

    27:38-27:41

Self-control must happen before you encounter temptation.

    27:43-27:45

He says, "So I do not run aimlessly.

    27:45-27:51

I do not box as one beating the air." Same principle, right?

    27:51-28:01

A boxer doesn't show up, ding, ding, and he's over swinging in the corner at nothing while all his opponents standing behind him going, "What is he doing?

    28:03-28:10

You're not gonna win many fights that way, are you?" When the boxer goes in, he says, "I have a plan.

    28:10-28:16

I stick to the plan and I stay focused." You're like, "Wait, wait, wait, wait.

    28:18-28:20

    Are we mixing metaphors here?

    28:21-28:27

You know, I thought we were talking about racing and now all of a sudden we're talking about boxing.

    28:27-28:28

    Like, which is it?

    28:29-28:33

And it sounds like a really fun sport because in Paul's analogy, it's kind of a hybrid of both.

    28:34-28:41

In other words, I'm running the race, but I have this opponent that wants to get me off track.

    28:41-28:45

And he like jumps on the track and tries to shove me off the track.

    28:45-28:49

And what I need to do is knock him out.

    28:52-28:54

    Like, well, who's this opponent?

    28:55-29:00

Who's this guy getting on the track with you and trying to shove you off track and get you distracted?

    29:00-29:05

Who is that guy that you have to knock his teeth down his throat?

    29:05-29:06

    Who is it?

    29:09-29:09

    It's me.

    29:12-29:14

I am my own worst enemy.

    29:15-29:16

    And so are you.

    29:17-29:18

    I don't mean you're my worst enemy.

    29:19-29:22

I mean, you are your own worst enemy.

    29:25-29:35

because it is your lack of self-control that is going to ruin you harder and faster than anything anybody else can do to you.

    29:39-29:45

That's why number five, finally, you must have a healthy fear of being disqualified.

    29:46-29:49

You must have a healthy fear of being disqualified.

    29:51-29:58

You can see the determination here in what Paul wrote.

    29:59-30:15

He says, "But I discipline my body, and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others, I myself should be disqualified." Paul says, "I control my body." Not vice versa.

    30:17-30:17

    Alright?

    30:18-30:27

I have this body that God's given me, it's fallen flesh that I'm currently living in, but listen, it doesn't tell me what to do.

    30:27-30:28

I tell it what to do.

    30:29-30:30

    I'm in charge.

    30:31-30:34

It's not leading me around by the leash and telling me what to do.

    30:35-30:36

I'm telling it what to do.

    30:36-30:39

I'm beating my body into submission.

    30:39-30:41

Like, why are you so fired up about this?

    30:44-30:46

He tells you right here why he's so fired up.

    30:47-30:50

He says, "Because I don't want to be disqualified." That's why.

    30:53-30:54

I don't want to be disqualified.

    30:56-31:00

Like, well, okay, in this analogy, what is disqualification?

    31:00-31:03

Well, he's not talking about losing your salvation.

    31:03-31:05

He is not talking about that.

    31:06-31:13

Biblically, if you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, if you have been born again, nothing can take that away from you.

    31:14-31:21

The Bible never uses any language that talks about, You're adopted by God, but then you're unadopted by God.

    31:21-31:25

You're born again, but then you're unborn again.

    31:25-31:28

You're sealed with the Holy Spirit, and then the Holy Spirit's seal is removed.

    31:28-31:30

The Bible never talks about that.

    31:31-31:35

When you're a child of God, you are a child of God for eternity.

    31:35-31:38

He's not talking about losing your salvation.

    31:40-31:41

    Because you can't.

    31:44-31:47

    you can lose your ministry.

    31:49-31:50

    That's what he's talking about.

    31:52-32:00

He says, "Lest after preaching to others..." That's so convicting.

    32:02-32:06

    After preaching, I knew better.

    32:07-32:14

You know, I stood in front of a group of people and I taught them, this is what God This is how to control yourself.

    32:14-32:18

This is how you guard sexual purity.

    32:18-32:28

This is how you maintain intimacy in the covenant." And I stood up, and I told him exactly what God said, but I didn't do it myself.

    32:30-32:31

    I'm a hypocrite.

    32:34-32:37

And I just proved that I have no business in ministry.

    32:40-32:49

And if you're a believer, you know that that's one of the greatest losses that you can experience in this life.

    32:51-32:52

It's one of the greatest losses.

    32:54-32:55

This isn't just for preachers and missionaries.

    32:56-33:10

Whether you're a small group leader, or you work in Harvest Kids, or you lead a ladies' Bible study, or you're leading the men's discipleship group, or whatever area of ministry that you've been entrusted To lose that?

    33:13-33:16

That's one of the biggest losses you will ever experience in this life.

    33:18-33:22

Because what you're saying is, "I was partnering with the living God.

    33:24-33:26

I was doing things that matter for eternity.

    33:28-33:30

    Lives were being saved.

    33:31-33:34

I saw people being changed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    33:34-33:36

    I saw people being healed.

    33:37-33:44

I saw people making major life decisions because of and empowered by Jesus Christ.

    33:45-33:50

I was on the front line of seeing the supernatural happen.

    33:53-33:53

    And it's over.

    33:55-33:58

I'm no longer able to do that.

    33:59-34:04

And I really don't have anybody to blame but me, Because I couldn't control myself.

    34:07-34:08

    I got myself disqualified.

    34:12-34:19

I've seen it happen to so many people in ministry, so many people who served the Lord so faithfully.

    34:22-34:23

Now they're on the outside looking in.

    34:26-34:30

They're watching other people do what used to give them so much purpose and joy.

    34:31-34:32

    Disqualified.

    34:35-34:36

And that can happen to you.

    34:39-34:46

You choose to not be self-controlled, but choose to indulge in sexual sin, you will ruin your testimony.

    34:46-34:48

You're going to shatter people's trust in you.

    34:51-34:55

And you're no longer qualified to serve Jesus in a ministry capacity.

    34:57-35:00

That's why I say you need to have a healthy fear.

    35:02-35:09

You know, we promote at our church, "I will not fear." We spend a whole year on that.

    35:09-35:14

Having our confidence in the Lord, and not being afraid, absolutely.

    35:14-35:29

But I do think there's a true aspect of having a healthy fear that I always keep in the back of my mind, "What's at stake if I refuse to exercise the gift of self-control that God's given me?" What's at stake? I could lose everything.

    35:30-35:38

In ministry that God has entrusted to me, you must have a healthy fear of being disqualified.

    35:43-35:44

    Self-controlled.

    35:47-35:50

Failure to do so can damage not only you, but everyone around you.

    35:50-36:02

your family, your church, co-workers, permanent irreparable damage.

    36:05-36:09

Sex is one of the greatest gifts that God has given mankind.

    36:10-36:16

And we have a responsibility to use it as God intended.

    36:17-36:23

Because when we do, we will reap the blessings that come when we do.

    36:25-36:28

So what's going to prevent its terrible misuse?

    36:28-36:36

What's going to protect you from making a choice that you're going to forever regret?

    36:39-36:46

It's partnering with God and using another incredible gift that He's given you.

    36:47-36:48

    And that's self-control.

    36:49-36:50

    Let's pray.

    36:52-37:02

Father in heaven, we've spent the last four weeks talking about sexual sin and self-control.

    37:04-37:19

Father, You know the struggles and temptations that are in front of us, living in this fallen flesh living in a culture that is constantly promoting sins of a sensual nature.

    37:21-37:24

And someday we will be out of this fallen flesh.

    37:25-37:35

Someday, this culture is going to be completely changed into a culture of righteousness.

    37:35-37:37

We know these days are coming soon.

    37:38-37:45

In the meantime, Father, I just ask for this church, that You would give us self-control.

    37:47-37:57

That we would truly understand why You created us to be sexual beings in the first place.

    38:00-38:07

And the resources that You've given us to guard that beautiful gift.

    38:09-38:27

I thank You, Father, for those who have stepped up in repentance, who have stepped up confessing, for those who are no longer able to keep things secret, or no longer want to keep anything secret.

    38:27-38:29

I thank You for all of those who stepped up.

    38:32-38:36

And already for the healing that's coming through repentance of the mind.

    38:36-38:54

And Father, I just pray if there's anyone else in here who's watching this stream, or downloads this later, Father, I pray for that person, or those people that Your Spirit would bring conviction that's going to lead to true repentance.

    38:57-39:04

Whatever's happening around us, Father, as a people who stand alone on the Word of God.

    39:07-39:12

Your name is glorified in the way we conduct ourselves.

    39:14-39:16

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

  1. What was your big “take-away” from this passage / message?

  2. Self-control is both a command and a fruit of the Spirit. What are the dangers of only believing one or the other? How do these work together? In other words, how specifically does a believer rightly balance these truths by going after both?

  3. How does the promise of receiving an imperishable crown (v25) motivate us to self-control today?

  4. “Self-control mostly happens before the moment of temptation.” Explain what this means. How do we exercise self-control before we are in a temptation situation?

  5. What does it mean to be disqualified (1 Cor 9:27)? Why is a person who lacks self-control not fit to be in ministry?

Is there any area where you are not self-controlled (1 Cor 9:25)?
Pray for one another to do the business of self-control today.
