Baptism

The Power of Meeting Jesus.

Review:

1 Timothy 1:15-16 - The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.

  • Pastor Jeff:

    00:00-00:02

Open up your Bibles with me, please.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:03-00:04

    The book of Acts.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:05-00:08

We're going to be in Acts chapter 9.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:11-00:17

And while you're turning there, do you want to hear the story about how we met Jerome Bettis?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:18-00:20

You know Jerome Bettis, Pittsburgh Steeler?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:20-00:22

How many people here have never heard of Jerome Bettis?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:24-00:25

    Awesome, okay, thank you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:25-00:26

    All right.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:27-00:57

Pittsburgh crowd, I figured everybody here heard of Jerome Bettis, right? So Aaron and I met Jerome Bettis, you remember this? We were at the airport, of course she remembers it, it was Jerome Bettis, we were at the airport and we were coming up these, we were coming up these stairs, we were kind of in a hurry to get to our plane, we were, where were we going? I don't remember, it doesn't matter, but we were heading up the steps and we turned the corner and Aaron accidentally clipped this guy, it was Jerome Bettis, she clipped him with her shoulder and and knocked him down, and she just walked right over him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:58-01:00

    And it was amazing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:02-01:07

Well, OK, that wasn't exactly what happened.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:08-01:13

We just kind of came around the corner, and Jerome Bettis was there.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:13-01:14

    And we were like, boss!

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:14-01:16

And he was like, hey, how are you doing?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:16-01:21

And we shook his hand, and that was it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:22-01:23

    Wasn't a great story.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:25-01:26

One time-- let's try this one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:26-01:32

One time, we were in Chicago, and we were on an elevator.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:33-01:41

And Aaron, to this day-- this has been a source of tension in our marriage-- but Aaron, to this day, insists that we rode on an elevator with Jon Bon Jovi.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:42-01:45

I don't think it was Jon Bon Jovi.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:45-01:46

I don't think it was him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:46-01:49

I don't think Bon Jovi stays at the Super 8 when he's in Chicago.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:51-01:53

We weren't at the Super 8, that was a joke.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:53-01:58

But this guy was on the elevator with us, and we're like, Aaron's like, that's Jon Bon Jovi.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:58-02:00

I'm like, that's not, that's Jon, no, that's not Jon Bon Jovi.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:01-02:12

Well, I don't think it was, but Aaron says, who else do you know that would wear paisley blue jeans, a black leather duster, and a sequined headband?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:13-02:16

So, maybe it was Bon Jovi.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:17-02:18

    Aaron's sure that it was.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:20-02:22

And how many people here have met somebody famous?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:23-02:24

    Somewhere along the line.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:24-02:29

It would be really neat if we could just go around and tell me the story of when you met somebody famous.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:30-02:36

And maybe some of us have an autograph, a picture.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:38-02:43

But really, none of those experiences ever really changed anything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:47-02:56

When you meet Jesus Christ - I mean, when you truly meet Jesus Christ, your life is never the same.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:59-03:03

You don't walk away from meeting Jesus and just say, oh, that was nice.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:06-03:16

History is full of stories, and this church is full of stories of people who met Jesus Christ and their lives were eternally and thoroughly changed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:17-03:26

And today we're going to be looking at the story of a man who met Jesus and not only was his life forever changed, he changed the entire world.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:30-03:36

Just to review, we've been going through the book of Acts, and really our whole ministry year has hung on one verse.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:36-03:37

    It's Acts 1.8.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:37-03:39

You can probably say it with me by now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:39-03:49

But Jesus said, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you." He will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the earth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:49-03:52

And that's exactly what we've seen in the book of Acts.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:53-03:56

The Holy Spirit came to indwell all of God's people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:57-03:58

    And they began witnessing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:59-04:04

And the religious leaders were constantly trying to stop all this Jesus talk.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:05-04:09

And it culminated in the execution of a young minister named Stephen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:11-04:13

And we saw how that scattered the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:13-04:17

The persecution made the believers head out of Jerusalem.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:19-04:24

But it did not stop the religious leaders from pursuing them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:25-04:32

That's why when we get to Acts 9, it says, "but Saul..." You remember Saul if you've been with us through this study?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:33-04:42

Saul was the guy - chapter 7, verse 58 - while Stephen was being pelted with stones, Saul was the guy saying, "hey, hey, what's your coach for you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:42-04:43

    So what's your coach?

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:43-04:43

    Get him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:44-04:45

    That was Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:46-04:51

Saul was a guy in Acts 8:1 that says he approved of Stephen's death.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:52-04:53

He wasn't standing on the side.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:53-04:55

Oh, that was a shame what they did to that guy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:55-04:58

He was standing there going, I'm so glad you got him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    04:59-05:02

One more of those Jesus people done.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:02-05:03

    He was approving of it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:03-05:16

Then you get to Acts 8:3, and we see that Saul was going house to house dragging people off to prison because they believed in Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:18-05:20

This is the same man we're going to see in this passage.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:20-05:26

He comes to Christ and becomes the greatest missionary and church planter of all time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:26-05:30

He's a man that wrote half of the New Testament including these words.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:30-05:32

Let's get these words up on the screen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:32-05:33

    This is from 1 Timothy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:33-05:34

    Can you see this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:37-05:45

Because as we look at of Saul's conversion today, we can look at that and say what application would that have for somebody like me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:45-05:48

You know, the Bible actually gives us the application of Saul's conversion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:48-05:51

Saul tells us when he became Paul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    05:51-06:08

When he wrote to Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:15-16, Paul wrote, "The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners to whom I am the foremost.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:10-06:28

But I receive mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display His perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in Him for eternal life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:29-06:31

So do you see what Paul is saying?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:31-06:41

Is that one of the reasons that God saved Paul was for you and for me as an example.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:42-06:47

An example to say, look, Paul's saying I was the worst sinner that ever lived.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:48-06:50

    And God saved me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:50-06:54

And that's to prove that God can save who?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:56-06:57

    Anybody.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:58-07:02

The mercy and patience that Paul received was to teach us about God's grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:03-07:07

I want you to jot some things down in your outline as we go through the text together this morning.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:08-07:14

So this passage is to teach us some things as an example of God's grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:14-07:18

So the question is, what do we learn about grace from Saul's conversion?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:18-07:19

Well, here it is, number one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:20-07:23

This is like what he talked about to Timothy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:24-07:26

Number one, the worst people can receive grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:27-07:30

The worst people can receive grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:33-07:34

I don't care how bad this guy was.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:35-07:56

But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus so that if he found any belonging to the way men or women - he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:58-08:00

    Because he was breathing threats.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:02-08:07

We could say he eats, sleeps, and breathes sports.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:08-08:10

That's all he talks about is fishing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:10-08:12

He just eats, sleeps, and breathes fishing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:12-08:16

Well, here it's saying for Saul, breathing threats.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:17-08:18

    What does that mean? Constantly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:18-08:19

    That's all he was doing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:19-08:21

    He was focused on that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:21-08:27

He gets up in the morning and he's like, we're going to stop this Jesus thing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:27-08:29

They called it "the way." That was what they called it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:29-08:31

They didn't call it the First Baptist Church or whatever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:33-08:35

not even Christians yet from what we can see in Scripture.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:35-08:43

They called the disciples of Jesus belonging to "the way." And that's all Saul at this point could focus on.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:43-08:45

We've got to stop these people that are in the way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:45-08:46

    We've got to stop them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:46-08:48

    We're going to kill them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:48-08:49

    We're going to imprison them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:49-08:51

We're going to go to their houses and we're going to drag them out.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:52-08:58

He was just obsessed with destroying Christians.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:59-09:00

    Think about that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:00-09:02

    obsessed with destroying Christians.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:05-09:07

He got letters from the high priest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:08-09:09

    These were letters of authority.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:10-09:21

As the high priest would have had authority to rule over Jewish affairs under Roman oversight, he got the authority to drag these people to prison.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:23-09:24

    Look at v. 3.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:24-09:33

It says, "Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus and suddenly a light from Heaven flashed around him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:34-09:39

Side note, Damascus was about 150 miles north of Jerusalem.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:39-09:42

That's roughly the distance from Pittsburgh to Columbus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:43-09:43

    Roughly.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:44-09:45

What this shows is his commitment.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:46-09:52

He was willing to go 150 miles away looking for Christians.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:54-09:57

That's how obsessed he was with destroying the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:59-10:12

As he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him and falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, "Saul. Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:13-10:19

Why are you persecuting me?" That's a good question, isn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:20-10:22

    So Jesus shows up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:25-10:34

And the question - after He knocks Saul down with the light, The question he asks him is, "Why are you persecuting me?" I was thinking a lot about that question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:36-10:37

    Why was he?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:38-10:47

You know, if you don't believe in the same way that somebody else believes, whatever happened to live and let live, man?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:48-10:52

Why are you so adamant about stopping this?

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:53-10:56

I mean, I once knew a guy who believed he was the king of Africa.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:57-10:59

even though I didn't agree with them, I didn't want to murder them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:01-11:07

So there's something more going on here than we have a different viewpoint of philosophies.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:07-11:08

    We have different worldviews.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:09-11:11

This is a spiritual war that's going on.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:11-11:12

    Understand that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:12-11:13

    It wasn't his day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:14-11:22

And with all the stuff with ISIS - beheading and shooting and drowning and crucifying Christians today - this is a spiritual war that's going on.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:24-11:26

But notice what Jesus says, how He asks the question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:27-11:29

And I say, "Why are you persecuting Christians?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:29-11:30

Why are you persecuting the way?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:31-11:33

Why are you persecuting those nice people?" What did Jesus say?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:33-11:43

He goes, "Why are you persecuting Me?" And you have to see, church, that when persecution comes upon Jesus' people, He takes that very personally.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:44-11:46

And He takes it very seriously.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:46-11:48

We saw that when Stephen was stoned.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:49-11:51

    He saw Jesus standing up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:54-11:58

Jesus saw when Saul here was getting these letters He didn't want to arrest Christians.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:58-11:59

    He was taking notice.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:00-12:14

Do you think that when you undergo persecution, and I know some of you have even very recently, have had to suffer because of your faith in Jesus Christ, do you think Jesus notices when you're persecuted?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:15-12:22

When somebody hates you or insults you, or does something against you because you love Jesus, do you think Jesus notices that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:23-12:24

    He does every time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:25-12:31

Why are you persecuting Me?" Jesus is like, "Saul, your business ain't with those people.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:31-12:32

    Your business is with Me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:34-12:39

    You're persecuting Me." Look at v. 5.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:41-12:49

"And Saul said, 'Who are You, Lord?'" I don't know what's going on there.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:49-12:50

I've read a lot of things.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:51-12:52

    Was he asking?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:52-12:54

Like, "Are You the Lord?" Are we recognizing?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:55-12:56

    Like, who are you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:56-12:58

I see that you're the Lord now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:00-13:02

I'm just not sure what you say in that situation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:03-13:10

You're just walking down the street and Jesus shows up and knocks you on your can on the ground and blinds you and what do you say?

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:10-13:12

    I don't know.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:13-13:22

But He says, "Who are you?" "Who are you?" Oh, he knew the truth now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:24-13:27

You know, with all these Jesus people running around saying Jesus is alive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:28-13:29

    Jesus is alive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:29-13:30

    Jesus is alive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:30-13:33

Well, Saul got to see that firsthand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:33-13:34

He's alive and he's still Lord.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:35-13:35

    Look at v. 6.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:37-13:38

    This is Jesus continuing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:38-13:51

He says, "But rise and enter the city and you will be told what you are to do." "The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, Hearing the voice, but seeing no one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:54-13:59

Saul's traveling companions heard something was going on but couldn't quite make out what it was.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:00-14:02

    Certainly couldn't see anything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:05-14:12

You have to see from v. 6-7, Jesus didn't show up, gently knocking at the door of Saul's heart.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:12-14:15

Jesus is standing outside the door of your heart, Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:15-14:16

    Knock, knock, knocking.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:16-14:17

    Won't you let Him in?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:18-14:24

Won't you let Jesus into your heart, Saul?" I don't see that in this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:24-14:26

I just see Jesus barging in.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:26-14:54

I see Jesus saying, "Ok, Saul, here's the deal." We didn't see God preparing Saul in the sense of - some commentators have even said, "Well, Saul had such a guilty conscience over the whole Stephen death that sort of made him ripe for this conversion, but that's not true because Saul actually said later, as Paul did, he kept a good conscience up to that point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:55-14:57

So I don't think he was carrying any guilt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:57-15:02

In fact, if he was feeling guilt, why was he going off and going after more Christians?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:04-15:24

And this is a really big encouragement for me, and it should be for you, because I know many of you have been trying to share the Gospel co-workers or family or friends, and you tell me, "He just doesn't seem interested." "Pastor Jeff, I tried to share the Gospel and he doesn't seem interested." And I want to encourage you not to worry if someone shows no interest in the Gospel.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:24-15:24

    Don't worry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:25-15:27

Your job is to love them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:27-15:29

Your job is to share when God gives you opportunity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:29-15:31

But you don't need to worry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:31-15:32

He's just not showing any interest.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:32-15:34

Saul didn't show any interest either.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:36-15:41

But when Jesus shows up, when Jesus shows up, You get real interested real quick.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:44-15:44

    Look at v. 8.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:47-15:50

"Saul rose from the ground and although his eyes were open, he saw nothing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:51-15:54

So they led him by the hand and brought him to Damascus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:54-16:05

And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank." Now, there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:06-16:08

Not the same guy from chapter 5.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:08-16:10

    Remember, he's still dead.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:12-16:12

    Okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:14-16:14

    Still dead.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:15-16:17

There was just another guy named Ananias.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:17-16:18

    It happens.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:21-16:40

"The Lord said to him in a vision, 'Ananias!' Ananias said, 'Here I am, Lord.' And the Lord said to him, 'Rise and go to the street called Straight.' And at the house of Judas - Marriott, still dead.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:41-16:42

    Another guy named Judas.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:44-16:47

Look for a man of Tarsus named Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:48-16:49

    For behold, he is praying.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:50-16:57

And he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:59-17:00

Ok, just stop here for a second.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:00-17:02

What do you think was going through Ananias' mind?

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:02-17:05

He didn't know the whole conversion on the road thing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:05-17:07

Jesus showing up, knocking him down.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:07-17:08

He didn't know any of that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:08-17:09

So many things have gone through his mind.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:13-17:14

    Exactly what you think.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:15-17:16

    Look at v. 13.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:16-17:23

"But Ananias answered, 'Lord, I have heard from many about this man how much evil he has done to Your saints at Jerusalem.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:24-17:33

And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name.'" Oh, the reputation preceded him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:36-17:41

Interestingly, Ananias would have been one of the people that Saul was targeting.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:43-17:50

Ananias would have been one of the people that Saul was going after to arrest and to drag back.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:53-17:57

And this is the best news for those of us who had a wicked past.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:59-18:03

That the Gospel of Jesus Christ is not limited to those who had a good upbringing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:04-18:09

to those who have been discipled in the home; to those who have already been upstanding citizens.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:10-18:12

    There's nothing wrong with that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:14-18:17

It's God's intention that parents disciple their children.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:19-18:27

So if you're sitting here today and you're like, you know what, I grew up discipled in the home and I gave my life to Christ very young, it's not like you have a lesser testimony.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:29-18:40

But sometimes, Sometimes we feel like because I didn't have that, maybe I can't be saved.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:40-18:46

I have pastor friends that tell me, "I gave my life to Christ when I was five.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:46-18:52

I remember Mom sitting on my bed and I remember praying." And I'm like, man, I wish that was my testimony.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:52-18:54

I didn't come to Christ until I was about 20.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:56-19:02

But you see, the story of Saul's conversion is great news for those of us who had a wicked past.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:05-19:11

This testimony forever stands that God can take the worst and make them the best.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:13-19:20

So if you're sitting here today and you say I've done too much bad, God's surely mad at me for all of the stupid and wicked things that I've done.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:21-19:23

You need to see that God loves you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:24-19:26

He sent His Son to die for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:28-19:31

And today can be the day Everything turns around.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:35-19:42

Because salvation is not based on what you did or what you didn't do in the past.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:42-19:45

Salvation is based on the blood of Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:45-19:48

Salvation is based on God keeping His Word.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:49-19:50

I had a guy come to me one time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:50-20:01

He goes, "I'm not sure if I'm saved." I said, "Well, what does the Bible say about being saved?" He said, "Well, the Bible says If I receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, then I'm saved.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:01-20:04

"Well, did you do that?" We talked about that for a while.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:05-20:11

He goes, "Yeah, I did do that." I said, "Well, then you're saved." Because it's based on God keeping His Word.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:12-20:13

It's not based on your conduct.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:15-20:17

It's an act of God's grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:18-20:22

You see, Saul certainly didn't earn it or deserve it, did he?

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:23-20:25

Jesus wasn't looking down from heaven going, "Wow, this guy looks great.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:26-20:32

I'll sign him up for the team." This guy was the most wicked person walking the planet at the time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:33-20:34

    He didn't earn it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:34-20:35

    He didn't deserve it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:35-20:36

    And guess what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:36-20:37

    You didn't earn it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:37-20:38

    You didn't deserve it either.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:39-20:41

And that's our big takeaway from Saul's story.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:41-20:47

That it doesn't matter what you did, it matters what you do with Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:49-20:50

God can save someone like Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:53-20:54

He can save someone like me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:56-20:58

God can save someone like Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:59-21:01

He can even save someone like you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:03-21:05

The worst people can receive grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:06-21:11

Number two, quickly, jot this down, grace chooses you because God wants to use you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:12-21:13

    Look at v. 15.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:15-21:21

"But the Lord said to him..." Again, this is the Lord speaking to Ananias protesting.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:21-21:22

I'm not sure I want to talk to this guy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:23-21:37

But the Lord said to him, "Go, for He is a chosen instrument of Mine to carry My name before the Gentiles and kings and children of Israel." Grace chooses you because God wants to use you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:38-21:39

    The whole theme of Acts.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:40-21:43

You will receive power and you will be My witnesses.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:44-21:46

That whole theme has come to rest on Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:49-21:50

Well, good for Saul. What about me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:51-21:55

Well, the truth is God doesn't transform anyone without a purpose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    21:56-22:00

God never says to anyone, "Ok, you're saved. Here's your ticket to heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:00-22:06

Now why don't you just go sit down and be quiet and be a good little boy?" Because the big people are going to do ministry now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:06-22:07

    And God's not like that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:08-22:11

When He saves you, He saves you for a purpose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:11-22:18

His Spirit gives you a gift to use for discipleship and evangelism.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:20-22:25

Ephesians 2:10 says that we're all God's workmanship.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:26-22:27

    Paul writing to the church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:27-22:35

He says we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:36-22:41

That's why the Lord says to Ananias, he's an instrument of Mine.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:42-22:44

And you're saved when you come to Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:44-22:46

You become an instrument of God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:47-22:51

And there is nothing more glorious than being an instrument in God's hands.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:53-22:56

You see, we take these instruments up here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:58-23:00

    They're pretty useless right now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:00-23:01

    Right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:02-23:03

    They're pretty.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:05-23:07

But they're pretty worthless right now just sitting by themselves.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:07-23:13

But when they're in the hands of people who know what to do with them, They make beautiful music.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:13-23:24

And in the same way, we are instruments that when God is at work, when God is using us, beautiful things happen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:25-23:27

    His Kingdom is advanced.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:27-23:28

    Lives are changed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:29-23:30

    Christ is glorified.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:33-23:40

There is no greater blessing than to know that God is using you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:41-23:57

after all is said and done, at the end of the day, the end of the week, at the end of your life, when you look back, the sweetest moments of your life you look back, are going to be those moments that you say, I know that God was using me in that situation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:00-24:02

So grace chooses you because God wants to use you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:05-24:12

Thirdly, receiving grace does not mean exempt from suffering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:14-24:15

    Look at v. 16.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:18-24:22

And the Lord's speaking to Ananias about Saul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:23-24:35

He says, "For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of My name." He says that Saul must suffer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:36-24:38

Now, this wasn't punishment for past sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:38-24:47

Don't get this idea that He was like, "Ok, He's been persecuting me, now I'm going to hit Him with the whammy because of all the rotten things that He's done." That's not it at all.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:50-24:53

He wasn't being punished for past sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:53-24:55

You are not being punished for past sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:55-25:02

God's not going to punish His Son on the cross and then turn around and punish you for your sin too.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:03-25:08

If you've accepted the payment that Jesus has made on the cross, then payment has been made in full.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:08-25:10

God's not going to punish you for your sin.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:12-25:13

    That makes the cross empty.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:14-25:20

But, the Bible says as Christians, we are all called to suffer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:20-25:23

Philippians 1:29 makes that very clear.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:23-25:24

    We're all called to suffer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:25-25:34

And Saul is about to go from gladly willing to kill to gladly willing to die for Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:35-25:37

He talks about this later on in his ministry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:37-25:38

    2 Corinthians 11.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:39-25:41

He was imprisoned. He was beaten.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:41-25:43

He was stoned. He was shipwrecked.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:43-25:44

He was hungry. He was thirsty.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:45-25:45

    He was cold.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:49-25:53

I hope you didn't think becoming a Christian was the easy way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:57-26:02

Despite how it's rolled out, Being a Christian is not your best life now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:05-26:08

Being a Christian is not every day is a Friday.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:09-26:11

The Gospel is often presented that way though, isn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:12-26:16

The Gospel is everything to gain and nothing to lose.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:16-26:23

And while it is true that you gain everything, in this life, you are going to experience some loss.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:24-26:27

You are going to experience loss in this life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:28-26:34

That's the part that's often left out share the gospel because quite honestly it's not a great sales pitch is it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:35-26:36

    Not a great sales pitch.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:37-26:41

Hey, how would you like to be hated by your family?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:42-26:43

Does that sound good to you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:46-26:47

Thanksgiving just a little too comfortable?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:49-26:52

How would you like to have people look down at you at work?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:52-26:54

How would you like to have your co-workers think you're a nut?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:56-26:57

Have I got something for you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:57-27:02

You can be a part of the only demographic that it's permissible to ridicule in this country.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:02-27:03

    How does that sound?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:05-27:08

You can be a target for people that hate this message.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:09-27:10

    Are you sold yet?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:14-27:19

How would you like to be a target to be killed in some countries?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:20-27:21

How's that for a sales pitch?

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:23-27:26

I'm not going to leave that out, but that's part of the Gospel.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:27-27:34

And if you haven't been told, I want to tell you now, there's one thing that we learned from the book of Acts and we're going to continue to learn.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:34-27:36

Following Jesus Christ is a hard road.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:37-27:38

    It's a hard road.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:42-27:43

    Standing for the truth.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:45-27:47

    Saying no to worldly passions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:50-27:56

loving people who hate you ; rejoicing when suffering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:59-28:11

For those of you who are getting baptized today, maybe some others here who are close to coming to Christ, you're going to suffer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:12-28:13

Life is going to be really hard sometimes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:14-28:16

And it's true, life's hard for everyone.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:17-28:17

    Absolutely.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:18-28:21

But when you follow Christ, It brings a special kind of suffering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:23-28:25

But it also brings a special kind of blessing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:26-28:31

It brings a special kind of knowing Christ that you wouldn't have otherwise.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:32-28:36

That's why - remember in Acts 5:41, remember when the disciples were beaten?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:36-28:37

    What did they do?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:37-28:39

    They ran out rejoicing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:39-28:44

They were like, "We were counted worthy to suffer!" And they were like high-fiving each other.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:48-28:49

    What is going on there?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:50-28:52

When you suffer for Jesus, you'll get it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:53-29:05

That's why the Apostle Paul says in Philippians 3:10 that he wants to know Jesus and the power of His resurrection and may share in His sufferings.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:05-29:09

It's a glorious thing to know Christ by sharing in His suffering.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:11-29:18

And finally, we have the privilege demonstrating grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:19-29:21

We have the privilege of demonstrating grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:21-29:22

Look at the last two verses.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:24-29:26

So Ananias departed and entered the house.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:29-29:34

And laying his hands on him, he said, "Brother Saul..." Isn't that amazing?

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:34-29:37

He calls him "brother" like first introduction.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:38-29:44

If that were me, I would have been like opening the door a crack like, "Is Saul in there? Mr. Saul?

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:44-29:48

Sir, are you in there?" His eyes just...

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:48-29:49

He refers to Him as brother.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:50-29:51

    That's faith.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:52-29:53

    Total faith.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:53-30:08

"Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." And immediately, something like scales fell from His eyes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:09-30:10

    It says like scales.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:10-30:13

I imagine it looked like contact lenses, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:13-30:16

Like these two little things It's like it fell out of his eyes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:19-30:20

    And he regained his sight.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:22-30:26

Then he rose and was baptized.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:27-30:30

    Taking food, he was strengthened.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:33-30:36

Well, that didn't go as planned.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:37-30:42

We're off to Damascus to drag Christians to prison.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:44-30:45

And we end up joining the team.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:47-30:49

It says immediately that Saul was baptized.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:52-31:06

There's no greater demonstration of the transformation that happens with Jesus Christ than to identify with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:09-31:11

Those of you who are getting baptized, I want you to come forward.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:12-31:13

up here on the stage with me, please.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:16-31:21

Understand in baptism, the water is like a liquid tomb.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:22-31:34

And when you go down into the water, what you're saying - what these four are going to be saying as they go down into the water, they're going to be saying, "I'm dead.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:35-31:46

I don't live for Me anymore." When you come up out of the water, what you're saying is I've been raised in the newness of life by Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:47-31:48

    He gave me life.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:48-31:53

And this life that I live is all about living for Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:54-31:57

Living in guilt-free grace as Mark talked about last week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    31:58-32:01

Doing the works that He has prepared me to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:01-32:02

    Suffering in His name.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:03-32:04

    I am His.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:05-32:06

    And He is mine.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:08-32:19

as amazing as Paul's story is, as world-changing as Paul's story is, we have something just as awesome to celebrate today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:21-32:28

We have four people who are demonstrating the transformation that Jesus Christ has brought into their lives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:29-32:34

We have four people who are demonstrating their commitment to Jesus and baptism today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:35-32:39

Here we have four lives that have been changed forever Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:39-32:46

Here we have four more instruments for God to use to glorify His name.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:47-32:48

    We have Kate Brown.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:49-32:50

    We have Corrine Miller.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:51-32:52

    Sherry Keshuba.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:53-32:54

    And Stephen Zeleznak.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:55-33:06

And as we close our time here today, let's hear their stories about how Jesus Christ transformed their lives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:06-33:34

And then, we're going to worship a little more get ready and then the service is going to be moving out to the back patio where we're going to be baptizing. So Kate, it seems like just yesterday was your wedding and it's been two years now. That just doesn't seem possible. This is a huge day for you and we're excited to hear how the Lord brought you to this point. So share with us how the Lord's working in your life, Kate.

    Kate:

    33:35-34:40

I was raised Catholic as a child and being close with God was not really something that I desired. It wasn't until I started attending youth group at Northway during my middle school years that I began to realize what it meant to actually have a relationship with Christ. Although I was a lukewarm Christian throughout high school in the beginning of college, somehow God led me to Geneva to pursue a youth ministry degree, which is where I met my husband Taylor. I feel like I began to mature in my faith during my last years in college and have been continuing to mature to this day. God continues to amaze me with his grace in my life and how he chose me to spread his love. Being in the godly marriage and being able to pour myself into a youth ministry has shown me how to live a life that has Christ as the cornerstone. I continually thought that I didn't need to get baptized. It was just something I thought was not necessary. But if we have the attitude that we don't have to do things, then we'll miss out on ways God wants to bless us and bless others through us. I stand here today to publicly declare that Jesus is my Savior and I want you to continually walk in the way of obedience.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:42-34:43

    Amen. Amen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:48-34:54

The next person is going to be baptized. I love you like a sister because you are.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:54-34:59

This is my sister-in-law. This is Corrine Miller and I'm going to be I'm reading your testimony for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:00-35:02

Corinne had asked that I would share her testimony.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:03-35:15

I can't tell you what a thrill it is to not only just have our first baptism service here, but just knowing your story and your journey and to bring you to this place.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:15-35:18

It's exciting to see how the Lord's at work in your life, Corinne.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:18-35:24

But Corinne shared in her testimony, "Before I turned to Christ, my life was filled with routines and rituals.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:24-35:29

I went through the motions of going to church because it was what I was supposed to do.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:30-35:36

I believed that since I was a good person and confessed my sins, that there was a chance I could go to heaven.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:37-35:39

I always lived with guilt and wanted to redeem myself.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:40-35:43

I never read Scripture on my own or attended Bible studies.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:43-35:45

I never realized how empty my life was.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:46-35:51

I came to Christ in early 2003 while attending Victory Family Church with Darren.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:52-36:03

At the end of the service, Pastor Nuzzo had us all close our eyes if anyone wanted to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior, that we were to raise our hand and the congregation would pray for us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:04-36:06

    Pray with us, excuse me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:06-36:13

He had asked that question a few times and I remember it was like a loud freight train in my head telling me to raise my hand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:13-36:15

It kept getting louder and louder.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:15-36:20

I literally responded in my head in my true, stubborn, Italian fashion.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:21-36:24

Alright, I will raise my hand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:24-36:25

What did your voice sound like in your head?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:26-36:26

    Was it a little rougher?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:28-36:30

Alright already! I'll raise my hand!

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:30-36:31

    Was it like that? Okay.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:33-36:35

As soon as I did, I felt a rush over me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:36-36:38

And then it subsided and there was peace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:38-36:40

I have no doubt that I was called that day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:40-36:43

From that day on, there's been no more doubt or guilt.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:44-36:46

Because that day I proclaimed Jesus as my Savior.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:47-36:48

There have been many changes since that day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:49-36:53

Like I said before, the guilt and worry about going to heaven is no more.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:54-36:57

I know that Jesus sacrificed Himself for me and my sins.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:58-37:00

Even though I'm not worthy, I accept His gift.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:01-37:06

I read Scripture, attend Bible studies, actively work in the church, and openly and proudly pray.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:07-37:12

I have learned to just put all my trust in God and to have surrendered myself to Him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:13-37:15

My entire way of thinking and acting has changed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:17-37:21

I can say that Jesus is at the forefront of my mind.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:22-37:26

I'm being baptized because I am proud that I'm a follower of Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:27-37:29

I want others to know that Jesus is my Lord and Savior.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:30-37:32

I want to rise out of the water new.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:32-37:39

There is no better way for me to display my love, faith, and commitment to Him than to be publicly baptized.

    37:42-37:42

    (applause)

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:47-37:50

The next person being baptized is a familiar face.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:51-38:03

the lady who runs the church. This is Sherry Kishuba. She serves currently as our administrative assistant and this is a huge day for you Sherry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:03-38:11

You have such a powerful testimony and you're going to be sharing part of that with us here today and we are thrilled for you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:12-38:15

We're thrilled with you at this huge step.

    Sherry:

    38:15-41:21

I accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized for the first time when I was nine years old. I was in and out of church for years after that, Baptist to Pentecostal to Catholicism, so I had lots of legalistic religion and ritual, but I never had a personal relationship with him. Fast forward to Friday, April 11th, 2014, where by that point I'd long since walked away from my face and I had become an angry, bitter, hurt, afraid, negative, miserable woman. And that day I was in the hospital for breast cancer surgery. So I was terrified and I silently prayed like this Hail Mary prayer to the Lord. God just give me a sign if you're here, if you're in control, if you were in this, show me." And so my surgeon, who I had seen before the surgery, but he had never given any indication that he was a follower of Christ, excuse me, he comes in and he's like, "Okay, let's pray. We're gonna pray for you and your husband and your daughter and your surgery," and I was just like, "Oh, okay," you know, and it was in that moment that I knew, like I knew beyond the shadow of a doubt, he wasn't like biological father who had been an out of my life for three times since I was an adult, he wasn't like people who disappoint because we do, we're human. He was there, and he was there with me powerfully in that moment and since then. And so as they will be back into the OR, I silently asked God for his forgiveness and rededicated my life to Christ on the spot. Now during my weeks-long recovery, my surgeon was also my spiritual healer and he literally prescribed to me to read the book of John and to read the book of James, like literally, and would ask me questions weekly, you know, about what I was reading, what I was hearing, and he would pray with me and he would pray with Kenny, and he encouraged me that when I felt well enough, get off my butt and get into an expository, like Bible-believing, preaching church and go, like just go, and I did. And so like the last two years, God has changed me in ways that it's to his glory and not mine, in ways that I never could have imagined. I am not perfect, but every day being sanctified by the power of the Holy Spirit, but I can tell you that I am not the angry, bitter, hurt, afraid, negative, miserable, dead woman walking that I once was. So here it is today, almost 40 years later, since that time that I was nine and I first got baptized and accepted Christ. There's a relationship with him. There's a growing understanding of him, a deepening of my faith in him. I am a committed follower of Jesus Christ, and I take this step of obedience because I love Him.

    41:25-41:26

    (applause)

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:31-41:34

Steve, I'm going to read your testimony in a second.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:35-41:36

I'm going to ask you a question.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:37-41:39

Do you still have that Bible we gave you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:39-41:39

    Okay.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:42-41:50

Those of you that don't know, We found out from Stephen's mother that every time he gets a Bible, he gives it away.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:51-41:53

And I think that is fantastic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:54-41:56

But I also think it's fantastic to have your own Bible.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:56-42:01

So for a graduation gift, we got Steve his own Bible and we gave you a couple other Bibles to give away.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:01-42:02

Did you give those ones away?

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:02-42:04

Not yet? But you're going to.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:04-42:04

    I know you will.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:05-42:06

    I know you will.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:06-42:08

But I've got to say something about this guy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:08-42:16

You know, when I preach, I'm like Santa Claus because I see you when you're sleeping and you're awake.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:17-42:21

And we were at a cafeteria service last year.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:22-42:23

We were still over at Marshall.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:24-42:29

And I remember looking up and you were sitting like two or three tables back on the left-hand side.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:31-42:35

But you were so locked in to what the Word of God was saying.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:35-42:45

And I went home and I told Aaron, I said, I don't know who heard the sermon today, but I know one guy for sure heard every single word That was Stephen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:45-42:53

And I just see in you this desire to know the Word of God and certainly a desire to share the Word of God with others.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:54-43:01

And now, you are going to be making the public profession of faith in Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:01-43:02

I'm going to share your testimony.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:02-43:06

Stephen said, "Well, it all started at the age of 14.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:06-43:07

    I was a typical teenager.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:08-43:10

I was getting arguments with my parents and sister.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:10-43:11

I would always yell at them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:13-43:15

I used to really scare my sister and I'd argue with her.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:15-43:17

I'd get violent towards her and hit her when we argued.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:18-43:22

I really hated myself and everybody around me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:22-43:25

In school, I was following the wrong crowd.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:26-43:29

I was bad in school with not making good choices and getting into trouble.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:30-43:32

Like I said, I really hated myself.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:33-43:36

At one point, my parents were totally fed up with me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:37-43:41

They told me it's either boot camp or start going to youth group with our church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:43-43:46

I was looking at military schools online, so I knew they were serious.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:48-43:51

So I chose to begin going to our church youth group, Blaze.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:51-43:57

During my first year attending Blaze, we went on a weekend retreat to Westminster.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:59-44:02

I went not realizing how much that weekend would change my life forever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:03-44:10

During the trip, the Blaze leaders would give talks about how sin came into the world and how Jesus died for us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:10-44:17

It was very emotional for me is to hear and realize how a person loves me so much to die for me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:17-44:20

I decided to take a chance and give my life to Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:21-44:27

I can say immediately after I did, my whole body was overwhelmed with love, joy, kindness, and lots of other emotions.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:28-44:31

Once I came home from the trip, I was a happier and kinder person.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:31-44:34

I learned how to love myself and everybody around me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:35-44:38

I also stopped doing the stuff my so-called friends were doing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:38-44:42

I can stand here today and say Jesus has really changed me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:43-44:46

I should have made the decision to be baptized earlier, but never did.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:47-44:55

Today, I'm making the choice to be baptized to show everybody and myself that I am truly born again and belong to Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:58-45:00

Why don't you step over here with the others.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:02-45:11

Can we just pray for the awesome testimonies that these four have shared with us today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:12-45:21

And then after I pray, we're going to see the public demonstration of identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:23-45:33

Father in Heaven, we spent some time in Your Word this morning looking at from a church's perspective, we would say it's one of the most important conversions in history.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:33-45:40

Here's a guy who planted churches and spread the Gospel and brought the Gospel to the Gentiles.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:41-45:45

We thank You, Father, for the way that You just show up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:48-45:50

    Your grace is awesome.

    Pastor Jeff:

    45:51-46:08

Father, just as we marvel at Saul, we certainly marvel in quite a different way as we have four people standing right here today sharing stories about how Jesus Christ intervened in their lives; how Jesus Christ showed up and transformed them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:10-46:12

I thank You for every single one of them, Father.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:13-46:16

For Kate, Corinne, Sherry, and Stephen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:16-46:19

I thank You, Father, for what You're doing in their lives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:20-46:24

They all have such beautiful and interesting stories about what brought them to this point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:26-46:32

The common denominator - sinners saved by grace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:33-46:40

People who received the gift of eternal life that You so lovingly poured out on us through Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:40-46:45

So Father, we celebrate with these four today with their families and friends.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:47-46:52

We thank You for this demonstration that shows exactly what happens in a person's heart.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:54-46:55

    Death to self.

    Pastor Jeff:

    46:55-46:58

The life of Christ in us now.

    We pray in Jesus' name.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 9:1-19

  1. *Read 1 Timothy 1:15-16. How does Paul’s conversion story serve “as an example”?

  2. Why do you think Saul was so zealous to hunt down and arrest Christians (Acts 9:4)? How do you see such zeal against Christians today? Do you think it’s the same kind of motivation?

  3. Why do you think God got Ananias involved (Acts 9:10-12)? What does this say about how God may use you to disciple someone?

  4. Paul obviously had a special calling (Acts 9:15). Does every believer have a special calling, or just some? Defend your answer biblically!

Open up your Bibles with me please to Acts 8.

    00:04-00:05

    Acts 8.

    00:07-00:12

While you're turning there, just by way of review, we've been walking through the book of Acts.

    00:12-00:39

Our theme for this year really has been from Acts 1.8 when Jesus promised the disciples, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." And as we've been walking through Acts, that Stephen, a young minister, was violently murdered by the religious council for preaching Christ.

    00:40-00:48

And after Stephen's death, a great persecution against Christians arose in Jerusalem and the church scatters.

    00:49-00:52

But as the church scatters, the believers went everywhere preaching the Gospel.

    00:55-01:07

One of Stephen's peers, by the name of Philip actually went to Samaria and preached Jesus to a receptive audience except for a magician named Simon.

    01:08-01:09

We talked about him last week.

    01:09-01:14

He wanted to purchase the power to transfer the Holy Spirit.

    01:17-01:20

Today, we're going to continue looking at Philip's ministry.

    01:20-01:23

We're going to be picking up in v. 26.

    01:24-01:35

The title of the message is just simply this - You know, last week we saw an example of somebody that Philip ministered to that didn't get it.

    01:37-01:43

And this week we're going to see a different story, as Philip shares the gospel with someone who does get it.

    01:44-01:47

So, Personal Evangelism 101, are you ready?

    01:47-01:54

Personal Evangelism 101, how can I be effective in sharing the gospel with someone?

    01:57-01:58

Write this down first of all.

    01:58-02:01

Number one, look for those that are seeking.

    02:03-02:04

Look for those that are seeking.

    02:08-02:19

Verse 26 says, "Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 'Rise and go toward the south, to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.

    02:20-02:25

This is a desert place.'" There were actually two roads that went from Jerusalem to Gaza.

    02:27-02:29

The one road was very traveled, very busy.

    02:29-02:33

This road in particular was the one less traveled.

    02:34-02:38

That's why Luke points out for us that this is a desert place.

    02:40-02:49

Interestingly, your Bible doesn't say, at this point, Philip interjected to say, "You want me to go where?" I mean, this wasn't exactly prime evangelism spot.

    02:50-03:02

And Philip would have seen great ministry opportunity while he was in Jerusalem, and then when he was in Samaria, and things were happening, and all of a sudden, the Lord has this divine appointment for Philip.

    03:03-03:07

I just want to encourage you church, you know, from time to time, we have these mission opportunities that come up.

    03:08-03:20

And a lot of times I hear people say things like, "Well, I'd really like to go, but... I feel like God wants me to go." But, if you feel like God wants you to go, then go.

    03:22-03:26

Maybe God has a divine appointment for you like He does for Philip in this passage.

    03:26-03:27

    Look at verse 27.

    03:28-03:32

It says, "And he rose and went.

    03:32-03:41

And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure.

    03:42-03:51

He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning seated in his chariot.

    03:52-03:54

And he was reading the prophet Isaiah.

    03:56-04:05

And the Spirit said to Philip, "Go over and join this chariot." So Philip encounters this man.

    04:05-04:06

    He's an Ethiopian.

    04:08-04:10

    He's a eunuch. He's actually a court official.

    04:10-04:13

The Bible says that he was in charge of the treasury.

    04:15-04:18

And he went to Jerusalem to worship.

    04:19-04:22

And on the way back, he had a scroll of Isaiah.

    04:23-04:28

I read this week that it would have been something that would have been very expensive for him to buy and very hard for him to get.

    04:28-04:32

Being a Gentile, getting a scroll of Isaiah.

    04:32-04:35

See, we're sort of spoiled when we want God's Word.

    04:35-04:42

We have copies available in book form, You have a stack of free ones on a resource table that you can take.

    04:43-04:44

It wasn't like that in this day.

    04:45-04:54

It was, you could buy parts of Scripture, these scrolls, and he just happened to buy the scroll containing Isaiah.

    04:56-04:59

And this is what he had his nose buried in when Philip found him.

    04:59-05:01

It wasn't like he was leafing through People magazine.

    05:03-05:16

The Bible says, "He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, reading the prophet Isaiah." I want you to see before we go on that this is somebody who was seeking.

    05:18-05:20

This is somebody who was seeking.

    05:20-05:24

I heard James MacDonald one time teach on red apple evangelism.

    05:25-05:33

And he said the best evangelism is red apple evangelism is looking for the people that ripened for the Gospel.

    05:35-05:38

And it's the circumstances of life that ripen people to the Gospel.

    05:39-05:44

And the point is this, you look for people that God is preparing through some trial or through some adversity.

    05:46-05:50

Or like the Ethiopian, people who are searching for life's answers.

    05:52-05:54

And you'll find that these people are everywhere.

    05:55-05:57

In your family, people you work with.

    05:57-06:00

You look around, you find people and looking for answers.

    06:02-06:06

People that the Lord is allowing some hardship into their lives.

    06:08-06:09

It's awakening them to spiritual realities.

    06:11-06:14

That's the first thing we see here is Philip found someone who was seeking.

    06:14-06:16

    This was a divine appointment.

    06:16-06:18

Numbers 2 goes right with this.

    06:18-06:18

    Jot this down.

    06:19-06:20

    Meet people where they are.

    06:21-06:22

    Meet people where they are.

    06:24-06:29

I don't know how you are when you read the Bible, but this seems kind of funny and you think about how that must have played out.

    06:30-06:48

Verse 30 says, "So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, 'Do you understand what you are reading?'" And if I'm this Ethiopian guy, my first question is, where in the world did you come from?

    06:49-07:14

Could you imagine sitting in your car in the passenger seat and you're reading something and all of a sudden somebody runs up and he pokes their head in the window of your car and says, "Hey, what are you reading?" "Who are you?" And here's this Ethiopian eunuch on this abandoned road in this chariot on this 500 mile trip back to Jerusalem, and Philip just shows up.

    07:15-07:18

"What are you reading?" I just thought that was kind of funny.

    07:19-07:22

But apparently he was so engrossed in the text that he didn't care.

    07:24-07:25

"What was he reading?" Look at verse 31.

    07:28-07:50

"Do you understand what you're reading?" Verse 31, "And he, the Ethiopian, said, 'How can I unless someone guides me?' And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him." Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this, "Like a sheep, he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth.

    07:51-07:54

In his humiliation, justice was denied him.

    07:55-08:02

I can't even describe his generation, for his life has taken away from the earth.

    08:04-08:07

The Ethiopian was reading specifically from Isaiah 53.

    08:10-08:15

Verse 34, "And the eunuch said to Philip, 'About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this?

    08:15-08:27

About himself or about someone else?' Then Philip opened his mouth, And beginning with this Scripture, he told him the good news about Jesus.

    08:30-08:37

I want you to notice here, Evangelism 101, you look for those who are seeking, but secondly, you need to meet people where they are.

    08:40-08:42

That's exactly what Philip did with this Ethiopian.

    08:43-08:47

He's reading Isaiah 53, a very familiar passage to us.

    08:48-08:51

He says, "Who is the prophet talking about here?

    08:51-08:52

    for somebody else.

    08:53-09:02

Notice Philip didn't go off on a rabbit trail to say, "Well, that's nice that you're reading Isaiah, but let's talk about Leviticus." Well, that was a wonky transition.

    09:03-09:06

The Bible says that Philip began with this Scripture.

    09:09-09:18

That's so important for us as we're looking for opportunities to share Christ with people, because people are searching for different reasons.

    09:20-09:21

    Everybody has the same need.

    09:22-09:26

But the thing that awakens the hunger in people is often different.

    09:28-09:29

    For some it's a tragedy.

    09:30-09:31

    For some it's death.

    09:32-09:35

    For some it's a self-examination.

    09:35-09:36

    What am I living for?

    09:38-09:43

For some, it's just not experiencing real fulfillment in life.

    09:44-09:46

    And that was my testimony.

    09:46-09:51

I went through a season in my life I just had zero fulfillment.

    09:51-09:57

And I was trying to find meaning and reason and satisfaction and all sorts of things - sinful and otherwise.

    09:57-10:06

And nothing was doing it until somebody told me the good news of Jesus Christ.

    10:07-10:09

    Everybody has the need.

    10:11-10:14

God just allows certain things to come into their lives to awaken that need.

    10:16-10:25

What you need to do in your personal evangelism, like Philip meeting people where they're at, you need to show people how Jesus meets every need.

    10:27-10:33

For example, if somebody's experiencing a death, it's your opportunity to say, yeah, it is a tragedy.

    10:35-10:37

It's a tragedy, unfortunately, that we all have to face.

    10:38-10:39

    We have good news.

    10:40-10:42

Because the Bible says that Jesus Christ conquered death.

    10:45-10:46

You're dealing with somebody with depression.

    10:48-10:58

God created you to have a relationship with Him, and even though life is hard, God made a way that we can know Him and experience real fulfillment in life.

    11:00-11:02

You need to learn to meet people where they're at.

    11:02-11:04

Jesus was the Master of this, by the way.

    11:05-11:06

    Think of John 4.

    11:06-11:07

Remember the woman at the well?

    11:10-11:13

Jesus promised her living water that spring up from within.

    11:15-11:26

Jesus was showing her that all of the things that she was looking for fulfillment in her life weren't working, and He was the one that could bring real fulfillment to her life.

    11:29-11:31

This Ethiopian obviously wanted to know God.

    11:32-11:35

He traveled 500 miles to Jerusalem.

    11:37-11:39

What made him buy a copy of Isaiah?

    11:41-11:44

What made him seek the Lord in Isaiah?

    11:44-11:45

    I don't know.

    11:47-11:49

But Philip saw that he was seeking.

    11:50-11:51

And he saw where he was seeking.

    11:52-11:55

And Philip, the Bible says, he began with that Scripture.

    11:57-11:58

Philip met Him where he was.

    11:59-12:09

And when you identify people that are seeking, when you discern where people are, number three, this is very important about evangelism, and make it about Jesus.

    12:11-12:12

    Make it about Jesus.

    12:15-12:24

It says, "Beginning with this Scripture, He told him the good news about Jesus." That's what makes it so exciting to share Jesus.

    12:25-12:26

    This is good news.

    12:28-12:30

But underline in your Bible that this is good news.

    12:30-12:41

Underline "about Jesus." Underline that. "About Jesus." It wasn't some generic, There's a higher power that wants to bless you.

    12:43-12:44

    This is about Jesus.

    12:46-13:04

A week or so ago, one of the elders at our church - I won't mention who - but one of the elders at our church loaned me a book called "Pulpit Crimes." I've got to tell you, it made me a little nervous when one of the elders comes to you and says, "Here, you need to read this book called 'Pulpit Crimes'." About all the wrong things that preachers do when preaching.

    13:06-13:07

that he wasn't trying to give me a hint.

    13:09-13:23

But the gist of the book, in order to remove the offense of the cross, which is motivated by various things, pastors will tweak the message to make listeners happy.

    13:25-13:30

One of the elders at a church I served in previously had told me that there was a study done by this man.

    13:30-13:32

He was going around the churches.

    13:32-13:34

This was a really weird study.

    13:34-13:38

I don't know what motivated this, but I remember what the study was.

    13:38-13:47

He was going around to different churches and he was counting how many times they mentioned the name of Jesus Christ in their worship service.

    13:48-13:49

Isn't that a weird thing to study?

    13:50-13:51

But that's what this guy did.

    13:51-14:01

He just went around, and he was shocked at how seldom Jesus was actually mentioned in the church.

    14:02-14:09

The man actually said that many of the churches didn't mention the name of Jesus one time in their service.

    14:10-14:13

Like, what in the world is going on in these churches?

    14:14-14:19

What are people talking about if they're gathering to celebrate?

    14:22-14:23

    What are they doing?

    14:24-14:27

So many churches didn't mention the name of Jesus even one time.

    14:28-14:30

    Why does that happen?

    14:32-14:34

Well, the reason that happens is It removes the offense.

    14:36-14:39

You see, people are content to keep God generic.

    14:40-14:50

People are content to say things, "God bless America." "God bless you." People are content to say things like that as long as we think of God as being generic.

    14:51-14:54

But as soon as you mention Jesus, now you have a problem because Jesus is a threat.

    14:56-15:05

Because you see, the very foundation of the Gospel of Jesus, Jesus said there's a throne on your heart you're seated on that throne.

    15:05-15:06

    You need to get off.

    15:06-15:09

You need to allow me, my rightful place on that throne.

    15:10-15:11

Jesus said you need to deny yourself.

    15:12-15:16

You need to allow me to be the absolute supremacy in your life in all areas.

    15:17-15:17

    That's a threat.

    15:20-15:25

So it's much easier to just sort of make God ambiguous.

    15:26-15:28

    Sort of a poetic concept.

    15:31-15:35

And when you're sharing the gospel with someone, You can dive into all kinds of theology.

    15:35-15:45

You can talk about creation, you can talk about sin, you can talk about the church, you can talk about heaven and hell, you can talk about how amazing the Bible is, and all of this is good stuff.

    15:47-15:52

But if salvation is only found in the name of Jesus Christ, then you better talk about Jesus Christ.

    15:54-15:56

That's the point in your personal evangelism.

    15:56-16:02

Get people talking about examining You is Jesus Christ.

    16:04-16:14

And finally for today, and this is what I really wanted to emphasize, Evangelism 101 #4, you need to encourage a decision.

    16:17-16:18

You need to encourage a decision.

    16:20-16:21

    Look at verse 36.

    16:22-16:27

It says, "And as they were going along the road, they came to some water.

    16:28-16:30

And Eunuch said, "See, here is water.

    16:32-16:45

What prevents me from being baptized?" So obviously, in Philip's sermon to the Ethiopian, in his Bible study with the Ethiopian, he must have mentioned baptism at some point.

    16:46-16:50

Now notice, your Bible probably jumps from verse 36 to verse 38.

    16:50-16:51

    Does your Bible do that?

    16:51-16:53

Does your Bible sort of skip verse 37?

    16:55-16:58

It's actually a footnote in most Bibles.

    16:59-17:00

Like, why isn't it with the rest of the verses?

    17:01-17:06

Well, verse 37 isn't in some of the oldest manuscripts.

    17:09-17:13

But obviously, some confession of faith had to have occurred at this point.

    17:15-17:17

Philip again must have mentioned baptism.

    17:19-17:23

Because as soon as they see some water, the Ethiopian says, "Well, here's water.

    17:23-17:25

and it prevents me from being baptized.

    17:25-17:37

Verse 38 says, "And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him." I love how unashamed that is.

    17:39-17:40

Let's just do it right now.

    17:40-17:43

Let's just stop and do this thing right now.

    17:43-17:53

Verse 39, "And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away, and the eunuch saw him no more and went on his way rejoicing.

    17:55-17:58

But Philip found himself at Azazelus.

    17:58-18:05

And as he passed through, he preached the Gospel to all the towns until he came to Caesarea.

    18:07-18:11

So Philip vanished just as abruptly as he arrived.

    18:12-18:14

And it says that he ended up in Caesarea.

    18:14-18:22

When you go to Acts 21.8-9, you see that apparently Philip settled there and began raising a family.

    18:22-18:25

Because we encounter him again much later in Acts.

    18:28-18:34

What you have here in Acts 8 is Philip explains Christ.

    18:35-18:37

    The Ethiopian accepted Christ.

    18:38-18:40

And Philip looked for a response.

    18:42-18:44

    Just as God does.

    18:45-18:53

And when you share the Gospel with someone, You can't stop short of letting them know that a response is required.

    18:54-18:57

Sometimes I think we're content to just make the Gospel on FYI.

    18:58-19:00

You know, Jesus died on the cross for your sins.

    19:00-19:02

Jesus rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    19:02-19:04

Just thought you might want to know. Have a great day.

    19:06-19:08

You need to look for a response.

    19:09-19:10

    Yes, salvation is a gift.

    19:11-19:16

But even with a gift, you have to take action to receive it, right?

    19:18-19:20

It doesn't just get dumped on your head whether you want it or not.

    19:21-19:22

    You have to do something.

    19:23-19:27

You don't earn it, you don't work for it, but it is a gift, and gifts must be received.

    19:28-19:29

    Encourage a response.

    19:31-19:41

And one of the responses is you need to encourage for someone who is born again, is baptism.

    19:43-19:44

I'm going to talk about baptism.

    19:45-19:46

Some of you have never made this step.

    19:48-19:52

If you study your Bible, this is actually step one when you come to Christ.

    19:52-19:56

Actually, an unbaptized Christian is foreign to the New Testament.

    19:56-19:57

    You just don't see that.

    19:58-20:04

What you do see when you go through the book of Acts, Christ is preached, Christ is received, people are baptized.

    20:04-20:11

There's actually a blog that we put back up on the website that just follows that pattern throughout the book of Acts.

    20:11-20:13

    That's what baptism's about.

    20:14-20:16

Before we close today, I want to talk about baptism.

    20:19-20:20

I'm just going to answer four questions.

    20:21-20:21

    What is baptism?

    20:22-20:23

    Who is baptism for?

    20:23-20:25

What is the purpose of baptism?

    20:25-20:29

And the last question, when should a person be baptized?

    20:30-20:32

When should a person be baptized?

    20:34-20:35

    Let's answer these four questions.

    20:36-20:37

    Letter A, what is baptism?

    20:39-20:40

    What is baptism?

    20:40-20:50

baptism is the visible, God-chosen, God-commanded response to my faith.

    20:52-20:54

It's visible - it means you can see it.

    20:55-20:58

It's God-chosen, meaning it's something that God came up with.

    20:58-21:04

It wasn't that some church invented baptism or some ancient theologian decided it was a good idea.

    21:05-21:06

It was something that God chose.

    21:07-21:09

    And it's God-commanded.

    21:10-21:19

Acts 17 says, "God now commands all men everywhere to repent." It's commanded that when you turn to Christ, you are baptized.

    21:19-21:28

Peter in Acts 2 says, "Repent and be baptized." It's commanded. It's part of coming to Christ.

    21:31-21:33

It's a response to my faith.

    21:34-21:37

The best way that I can describe baptism is it's like a wedding ceremony.

    21:40-21:44

A wedding ceremony doesn't make me committed to my spouse.

    21:45-21:52

It is the declaration before God and before man that I'm giving my life to this person.

    21:54-21:59

You see, when I got married to Aaron, we didn't fall in love on the wedding day.

    22:02-22:06

It was because of the love that we had for each other that we had the wedding ceremony.

    22:08-22:18

But nothing magical happened at the ceremony as far as, "Well, now I love her, now I'm committed to her because we went through the ceremony." Baptism is the same way.

    22:20-22:21

    Baptism is a symbol.

    22:22-22:37

And just as on the wedding day, I declared before God and man that I'm making a commitment to this woman, baptism is you're making a declaration for God and man, that you are committing yourself to being a follower of Jesus Christ.

    22:41-22:45

Baptism is a visible God-chosen, God-commanded response to my faith.

    22:47-22:48

    So who is baptism for?

    22:48-22:49

    Letter B.

    22:50-22:54

It is for people who have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    22:57-22:59

Again, baptism does not save you.

    23:00-23:04

is the expression that you have been saved.

    23:06-23:08

Baptism itself does not save you.

    23:09-23:14

There are some preachers and there are some churches that teach unless you're baptized, you're unsaved.

    23:16-23:29

I actually knew a hospital chaplain that had this elderly woman that was hooked up to all sorts of machines and tubes and she wanted to receive Christ and this hospital chaplain said, "We need to get her to the tub.

    23:29-23:34

to get her baptized so she can go to heaven." And the medical staff was like, "You can't move this woman.

    23:35-23:51

If you unhook her, you're going to kill her right now." And this chaplain was like, "I'm sorry, there's nothing I can do for you." And he walked away, leaving these people feeling like this elderly woman was heading for hell simply because she wasn't able to get baptized.

    23:52-23:54

Now let me ask you, does that sound like the character of God?

    23:56-23:59

Does that gel with what you read about God and His Word?

    23:59-24:00

    Absolutely not.

    24:02-24:04

    Baptism doesn't save you.

    24:06-24:09

It's the expression that you have been saved.

    24:10-24:13

It's for people that have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    24:15-24:17

Common excuses for not getting baptized.

    24:17-24:19

I want you to jot these down.

    24:20-24:22

Common excuses for not getting baptized.

    24:25-25:06

now as soon as we talk about baptism there's somebody here that hasn't been baptized and you're like yeah and here's why I haven't I'm gonna go through these number one I was baptized as a baby I was baptized as a baby well the problem with that is babies are unable to accept or reject Jesus Christ I remember when Both of my kids were born at McGee Hospital, and I'll never forget each time, "Congratulations, Mr. Miller, it's a boy." And they handed me this baby, and I would say, "Owen, are you ready right now to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

    25:07-25:08

Are you ready to turn from your sin?

    25:09-25:11

Okay, let's get baptized." Obviously not.

    25:12-25:14

Babies are unable to do that.

    25:14-25:18

You don't see baptism for babies anywhere in Scripture.

    25:18-25:19

    You don't see it.

    25:19-25:27

Every single time somebody's baptized, because they are responding to the call of the Holy Spirit.

    25:27-25:30

They're responding to salvation in Jesus Christ.

    25:33-25:34

The result of being born again.

    25:35-25:35

    It's a picture.

    25:37-25:39

So being baptized as a baby doesn't count.

    25:41-25:45

I kind of wish that it did count though, because I was baptized three times.

    25:45-25:46

I was baptized as a baby Lutheran.

    25:47-26:09

I was baptized when I was 12 Methodist, baptized when I came to Christ when I was 20. I'd like to think that that gives me like three times more spirituality than the rest of you. It doesn't. It doesn't. Baptism that I experienced when I was a baby, I don't even remember it. And it doesn't mean anything, biblically.

    26:12-26:23

So, common excuses for not getting baptized. I was baptized as a baby. That's I defend my parents, or I defend my family.

    26:25-26:28

Some people don't want to get baptized because they're afraid of who that might offend.

    26:29-26:51

And we already saw in the book of Acts, the slogan that hangs over every true follower of Christ is in Acts 5.29 when the apostles said, "We must obey God rather than men." We live in a day that we're so afraid we're going to offend somebody, except for God.

    26:53-26:55

Let's be more concerned about offending Him.

    26:56-27:00

Number three, I need to wait until I'm on track spiritually.

    27:02-27:23

Some people say, "You know Pastor Jeff, I know I need to get baptized, but right now I'm just not on track spiritually, and I'd really rather wait until I'm on track." So you're saying you're struggling in some area of obedience, so you're going to forfeit another clear area of obedience until you get this other one cleared up.

    27:26-27:27

    You can't change yourself.

    27:30-27:34

Be obedient. Yield to Christ. He's the one that changes you.

    27:35-27:38

If you're waiting until you're perfectly on track spiritually, it's never going to happen.

    27:40-27:41

    You don't have the ability.

    27:44-27:48

Number four, I don't like being in front of people.

    27:49-27:53

I can promise you that there's nothing to be shy or ashamed about.

    27:53-27:55

    This is a glorious testimony.

    27:57-27:58

    It's a glorious testimony.

    28:00-28:03

Don't let shyness hinder you from taking this important step.

    28:03-28:06

Number five, I need to pray about it.

    28:07-28:08

I need to pray about it.

    28:08-28:09

Really, we talked about this last week.

    28:10-28:11

It's not really to pray about.

    28:11-28:13

It's a matter of simple obedience.

    28:13-28:16

When God says to do something, you honor Him and you do it.

    28:18-28:19

    What is baptism?

    28:20-28:26

"Baptism is a visible, God-chosen, God-commanded response to my faith." Letter B, who is baptism for?

    28:27-28:30

It is for people who have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    28:31-28:33

Letter C, what is the purpose of baptism?

    28:36-28:38

It is the profession of faith.

    28:39-28:41

It is the profession of faith.

    28:43-28:50

Meaning, coming to Christ was never meant to be signified by signing a card or walking an aisle or raising a hand.

    28:51-28:54

Biblically, the profession of faith is in baptism.

    28:56-28:58

    This is what God chose.

    28:58-29:07

Romans 6:1-5 In baptism, you are graphically identifying with the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    29:08-29:09

That's why it's done by immersion.

    29:10-29:12

You see, it's a picture, just like we talked about a wedding ceremony.

    29:13-29:15

In a wedding, you have all these pictures.

    29:15-29:24

You have the white dress, and you have the wedding ring, and you've got the flowers, and you've got the smashing the cake in each other's faces or whatever.

    29:24-29:27

You've got all these pictures at a wedding that symbolize something.

    29:28-29:33

Well, baptism is a picture of death and resurrection.

    29:33-29:37

When you go under the water, what you're saying is, "I'm dead.

    29:37-29:44

I'm buried." And then when you come up out of the water, you're identifying with the resurrection of Christ.

    29:44-29:53

"I am raised in the newness of life with Jesus Christ." It is the profession of faith when it's done by immersion.

    29:54-29:57

And finally, when should a person be baptized?

    29:59-30:03

It is to be done immediately on belief.

    30:05-30:11

The question comes up, "What if I've already been baptized?" Well, has it been since you believed in Jesus Christ?

    30:14-30:15

If not, then you should be baptized.

    30:17-30:23

Or some say, "I came to Christ a while ago and I didn't get baptized immediately.

    30:23-30:26

Is it too late?" Is there an expiration date?

    30:26-30:44

Is there a statute of limitations on how long between conversion and baptism, all I can say is this, I don't know what you knew then about baptism, but now you know some things about baptism, and you can only act on what you know.

    30:45-30:52

So if you've never taken that step, as of today you don't have an excuse not to take that step.

    30:54-30:57

I encourage people to take their next available opportunity.

    30:59-31:00

    So what is baptism?

    31:03-31:05

The visible God, chosen God, commanded response to faith.

    31:06-31:07

    What is baptism for?

    31:07-31:10

It's for people who have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    31:10-31:11

    What's the purpose?

    31:12-31:13

It is the profession of faith.

    31:15-31:16

Once you're a person, be baptized.

    31:18-31:25

A person should be baptized as soon as possible on belief in Jesus Christ.

    31:26-31:29

We're going to close our time in worship, and we're going to have some people up front here to pray.

    31:31-31:32

And you can come up and pray for any reason.

    31:34-31:36

Or maybe there's someone here today that says, you know what?

    31:36-31:37

I need to take that step.

    31:38-31:40

    I need to be baptized.

    31:40-31:41

    I want to come forward.

    31:42-31:50

And I want to have my name on that list for August 7 so I can glorify God with a professional.

    31:51-31:52

    Let's pray.

    31:53-31:54

and we'll worship and you come down and pray with us.

    31:55-32:02

Father in Heaven, You've called every single one of us to be ambassadors for Christ.

    32:04-32:09

And I thank You for clear instruction like we see in the life of Philip.

    32:11-32:13

    What effective evangelism looks like.

    32:13-32:15

It's finding people who are seeking.

    32:15-32:16

It's meeting people where they're at.

    32:16-32:19

It's talking to them about Jesus.

    32:21-32:23

    is encouraging a response.

    32:25-32:32

Father, I pray for those that are making that profession of faith here in August.

    32:34-32:38

What a glorious testimony it is at the way You've taken a dead person and made them alive.

    32:40-32:45

I pray, Father, if there's anyone else here that needs to take that step.

    32:48-33:05

Whatever obstacles in the way, Father, I pray that the desire to glorify Your name, the desire to do something very simple that You've called us to do, I pray that that desire would override anything else that might be hindering that decision.

    33:07-33:15

Father, we thank You for this glorious picture that You've given us in baptism, what actually takes place when we're born again.

    33:18-33:24

We are dead and we have been made alive in Christ's name.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 8:26-40

  1. How can you tell if an unsaved person YOU know (coworker, gym buddy, neighbor, whatever) is seeking?

  • 00:01-00:03

And we'll get to that next week.

    00:05-00:06

So what are we doing this week?

    00:06-00:12

Well, do you notice that sometimes the Lord initiates an interruption, right?

    00:12-00:13

Has that ever happened to anyone?

    00:14-00:18

That the Lord initiates an interruption in your life?

    00:19-00:22

    And usually it's something urgent.

    00:24-00:30

So this week we're going to be having a little seminar called Baptism 101.

    00:31-00:37

This past week, as many of you know, Sammy and I drove out to Chicago for some additional training.

    00:37-00:52

I was with the preachers and Sammy was with the worship staff out at Big Harvest, or as we like to affectionately call it, the "mothership." And while we were out there, we were out there from, what was it, Monday morning?

    00:52-00:59

We got back like Thursday morning at like one something in the morning, at least that's when I got back and after dropping Sammy off.

    01:01-01:09

While I was out there, one of the harvest pastors that was teaching actually, Joel Anderson, he's the pastor of Harvest in Orlando.

    01:10-02:26

And during lunchtime, I leaned over to him and I said, "Could you cover something for me?" I said, "I need you to teach me how to write a sermon in two days." I write my own sermons and usually that takes all week. I didn't have all week. I said, "How do you write a sermon in two days?" and he said, "Well, what are you preaching on?" I said, "Well, I'm preaching on baptism." And he said, "I'll just give you my notes." Now, I'd be a fool to turn that down, right? So some of the things I'll be sharing with you in the beginning, I gleaned from Joel Anderson's notes and that's just in the first part so I'm thankful to him for that but I want you to turn to your Bibles. Baptism 101 we're first of all going to walk through a passage Acts chapter 8 in verse 25. If you do not is there anybody who does not have a Bible we will get you one. We have some out on the table anybody not have a Bible? All right we're good. If you ever need a Bible there's I'm out in that welcome table. Those are yours to keep. Acts chapter 8 and verse 25.

    02:29-02:49

Just as God interrupted the events on the earth to proclaim that salvation from sin is found through Jesus Christ, again we've interrupted our Colossians series and we're going to talk about the life-changing impact this message is going to make. We're just going to walk through this passage.

    02:51-02:58

Picking up in verse 25, it says, Now, when they had testified and spoken the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem.

    03:00-03:01

    Preaching the gospel.

    03:03-03:06

To many villages of the Samaritans.

    03:07-03:49

Underline in your Bible these three words testified, spoken and preaching, I underlined in mind, those three words are all talking about the same thing. It's sharing the good news of the gospel. But notice also in this verse who the message was for. It says it was for the Samaritans, and that's a significant thing when you see that in Scripture, because the Samaritans were the most hated people by the Jews. The Samaritans were considered a half-breed, so to speak, And there was a lot of, I guess you could say, racial animosity between the Jews and the Samaritans.

    03:52-03:56

And it was to many villages of the Samaritans that the gospel was going forth.

    03:57-03:59

So obviously great stuff was happening.

    04:00-04:03

And when you stop right there, you would say, "Well, they're just killing it.

    04:03-04:07

They're going through these villages and they're preaching the Word and they're seeing fruit.

    04:09-04:15

Not the time to rock the boat, right?" Well, look at verse 26.

    04:15-04:35

It says, "Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, 'Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. This is a desert place.'" So Luke, first of all, let's look at the end of the verse.

    04:35-04:37

He points out that this is a desert road.

    04:38-04:40

    Any Robert Frost fans here?

    04:42-04:43

    Just one?

    04:45-04:46

What are we, a bunch of barbarians?

    04:46-04:49

    Robert Frost? The poet? Anyone?

    04:51-04:55

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and sorry I could not travel, but...

    04:55-04:58

Really? Nobody? You guys are looking at me like I'm... Okay, thank you!

    04:59-05:07

You're like, "I raised my hand, so he shuts up." Well, there were... I don't like Robert Frost either, I'm just kidding.

    05:08-05:10

    It's nothing personal.

    05:12-05:16

It's just it took me like three years of my young life to memorize that poem.

    05:19-05:28

Well just like that poem, there were actually two main roads from Jerusalem to Gaza at this time and what Luke is pointing out here is this is the road that was less traveled.

    05:31-05:32

And you know the end of that poem right?

    05:32-05:36

that has made all of the difference, right?

    05:38-05:46

Well, the text doesn't say this, but sometimes you just wonder what was going through Philip's mind at this point.

    05:47-05:52

Philip, you're kicking things here in these Samaritan villages, and the gospel's going forth, and we're seeing fruit.

    05:53-05:54

I want you to go to this deserted place.

    05:56-05:59

And Philip goes, but honestly, could you imagine?

    05:59-06:00

He'd be like, "What, you want me to go where?

    06:02-06:04

You go the middle of nowhere, really.

    06:06-06:08

And that's what he was called to do, and that's what he did.

    06:10-06:12

Look at verse 27, and he rose and went.

    06:15-06:24

And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure.

    06:25-06:28

He had come to Jerusalem to worship.

    06:31-06:43

Again, this isn't really a primo evangelism spot, but this eunuch, there he was, on his way back from Jerusalem, which would have been a 500-mile trip.

    06:43-06:49

But get this, because he was a eunuch, he would not have been allowed to enter the temple area.

    06:50-08:35

It isn't that interesting that he'd make the trip to worship, to not be allowed in the temple area, so it's sort of as if he missed the religion, but he was interrupted by an invitation to a relationship. Look again, verse 28, "And he was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, 'Go over and join this chariot.' So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I unless someone guides me?" And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now when I read this passage I always think the same thing. Like how lucky was that for Philip? Not lucky, but providential. How couple weeks about evangelism, right? What an evangelism opportunity! You see a guy just sitting there reading the Bible? He's like, "I don't understand what this is." Like, "Really? Well, let me sit down and share some things with you." But you notice that Philip started with a question. Notice he didn't say, "Do you like what you're reading? Are you enjoying that?" What did he ask him? "Do you understand?" Do you understand? The part of loving the Lord is loving the Lord with all our mind.

    08:35-09:00

And when we go to God's Word, we need to seek to understand what He is saying. That's exactly where Philip started, "Do you understand what you are reading?" So Philip's question is responded to with a question, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" He obviously didn't quite understand what he was reading.

    09:02-09:20

Verse 32, "Now the passage of Scripture that he was reading was this," and this is from Isaiah 53, "Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter, and like a lamb before its shearer is silence, so he opens not his mouth.

    09:20-09:23

In his humiliation justice was denied him.

    09:24-09:39

Who can describe his generation, for his life is taken away from the earth?" Once again, that's quite a blessed spot to be meeting someone who's reading the Bible, right?

    09:41-09:49

You know, it wasn't as if the guy was stuck in a genealogy in Genesis or, you know, reading about the conquered lands in the book of Joshua.

    09:50-09:55

He was right smack dab in the middle of a passage about the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ.

    09:56-09:57

    That has to be providential.

    09:58-09:59

I mean, wouldn't you agree with that?

    09:59-10:00

    That has to be providential.

    10:02-10:02

    Isaiah 53.

    10:04-10:10

Isaiah lives 700 years before Christ and he wrote 21 prophetic points that came to pass.

    10:10-10:11

    Here are some of them.

    10:13-10:14

    Here are some of them.

    10:14-10:17

Isaiah 7, 14 says the Messiah would be born of a virgin.

    10:19-10:24

Isaiah 9, verses 6 through 7 says that there would be a son called God.

    10:26-10:31

Isaiah 35, verses 4 through 6 says that the Messiah would perform miracles.

    10:33-10:37

Isaiah chapter 40 says the Messiah would be preceded by a messenger.

    10:39-10:45

Isaiah 49.6 says God's salvation would reach the ends of the earth.

    10:45-10:52

And when you get to Isaiah 53, that's all about the atoning ministry of Jesus Christ.

    10:54-10:55

    That whole chapter.

    10:57-11:08

Interestingly, in a lot of very Orthodox Jewish services, Isaiah 53 is actually skipped when they read through Isaiah.

    11:10-11:15

Because for a lot of the mindset, it's we don't want to think of the Messiah.

    11:15-11:19

We know the Messiah is coming, but we don't want to think of a Messiah who would come and suffer.

    11:20-12:01

So one of the main evangelism tools that are used to reach out to Orthodox Jews is opening their own scriptures to Isaiah 53. And a lot of Orthodox Jews have never read that, have never heard it, and they think that Christians are reading to them out of the New Testament, when in fact it's in the Old Testament. So clearly describes the ministry of Jesus Christ 700 years before Jesus was on the scene. Look at verse 35 again back in Acts chapter 8.

    12:03-12:09

Verse 34, "The eunuch said to Philip, 'About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this?

    12:10-12:30

About himself or about someone else?' Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this scripture, he told him the good news about Jesus." So understand, that's what Philip did, was he just preached Jesus.

    12:31-12:35

We spent a lot of time the last couple of weeks talking about the urgency of getting the gospel out.

    12:36-12:39

And when you share the gospel with someone, does anybody remember what's the word?

    12:39-12:40

    We need to be clear.

    12:42-12:43

    Clear.

    12:43-12:44

How do you share the gospel?

    12:44-12:45

    Clearly.

    12:45-12:48

And that flies in the face of a lot of evangelism methods today.

    12:49-12:58

Notice Philip didn't take the guy golfing for three years, hoping that he could kindle some kind of a friendship with him so someday, maybe in a few years, I can invite him to come to church with me and maybe hear the gospel.

    12:59-13:00

    He didn't do that.

    13:01-13:03

He didn't hand him a gospel tract.

    13:05-13:14

He very clearly, I'm not against gospel tracts, but he just very clearly opened his mouth and said, "Well, let me tell you what the Bible says about Jesus Christ," and laid it out.

    13:15-13:25

Here's some things that Philip would have told him, preaching Jesus, jot this down on your outline, because that's what we're after here, too.

    13:29-13:34

And if you don't know who Jesus Christ is or what he's done, I got some fantastic news for you today.

    13:34-13:36

I got the best news you'll ever hear today.

    13:40-13:45

Here's what it means to preach Jesus, first of all, number one, realize that I am a sinner by nature.

    13:47-13:54

Romans 3.23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." It has to start there. It has to start there.

    13:55-13:59

It has to start with us acknowledging our need and our dependence.

    14:06-14:12

You can go to any religion in the world, go to any atheist in the world, any agnostic in the world.

    14:12-14:16

Do you know there's one thing that every single person in the world agrees on?

    14:17-14:19

And that's that we are messed up.

    14:21-14:22

    Everybody will agree with that.

    14:23-14:24

    That there is something wrong.

    14:26-14:29

Now, of course, there might be different ways we try to define that.

    14:31-14:37

A psychologist might define it one way, and a Buddhist might define it another way, and an atheist might define it another way.

    14:40-14:44

But as Christians, we know from the Word of God what's wrong.

    14:45-14:47

    We are born dead spiritually.

    14:50-14:52

We are born with a sin nature.

    14:53-14:56

The first thing you need to do is realize that I am a sinner.

    15:01-15:10

Number two, recognize that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sin and rose from the dead to give me eternal life.

    15:13-15:19

We're going to be talking all about the atoning work of Jesus Christ here in a few weeks as we get into Easter.

    15:21-15:34

But understand that Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, came to this earth about 2,000 years ago and laid down his life by being publicly executed on a cross.

    15:38-15:43

A humiliating, painful and slow death.

    15:45-15:53

The Bible tells us that while Jesus was hanging on the cross, God's wrath was being poured upon him.

    15:54-16:08

That's why Jesus cried out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" He felt the separation from his heavenly father in a way that I can't understand or explain fully to be honest with you.

    16:09-16:16

But in that moment, Jesus became sin because he knew no sin.

    16:17-16:30

If Jesus would have sinned and he was nailed to the cross, we could have just said, "Well, he got what was coming to him." But because he was perfect in being punished, there's a sense in which, whose punishment is he bearing?

    16:32-16:42

While the God-man, Jesus Christ, was bearing my sin and your sin while he was on the cross.

    16:44-16:46

God was pouring his wrath out on Christ.

    16:48-16:49

And then they laid him in a tomb.

    16:51-16:52

But you know the rest of the story, right?

    16:53-17:01

Three days later, Jesus Christ rose from the dead to prove that sin and Satan and death have all been defeated.

    17:03-17:06

He died for our sins and He rose to give us life.

    17:10-17:14

You have to understand that, we'll get more into this in a couple of weeks, Jesus Christ wasn't just some martyr.

    17:15-17:19

He wasn't just some eye of the tiger inspirational story.

    17:21-17:27

He laid down his life and rose from the dead so that we could be forgiven of our sins and have eternal life.

    17:28-17:30

Number three, repent from my sin.

    17:32-17:33

    Repent from my sin.

    17:34-17:36

    Repentance is part of this.

    17:38-17:45

Repentance is a word that's almost completely become quote unquote outdated in the church.

    17:45-17:46

    Who talks about repentance?

    17:49-17:53

But I'd like you to show me anywhere in God's Word where He offers forgiveness without repentance.

    17:55-17:56

    He doesn't do it.

    17:57-17:59

    Step one is repent.

    18:00-18:00

    What does repent mean?

    18:01-18:03

Literally, it means to change your mind.

    18:03-18:07

The Bible talks about how our minds are renewed in Christ.

    18:07-18:08

    That's what repentance means.

    18:08-18:10

A lot of times we associate repentance with actions.

    18:12-18:15

But if that were the case, I could train a monkey how to repent.

    18:16-18:17

    It's not just the action.

    18:18-18:24

Repentance is you change your mind, you let your mind be renewed and your actions follow.

    18:26-18:37

But over and over, Scripture says, "Repent, turn from your sin." Number four, receive Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

    18:38-18:40

Believe Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.

    18:45-18:54

It's through believing on His name, believing that Jesus is who He said He is, Lord, and that He accomplished what He said He would accomplish.

    18:55-18:58

It's by faith receiving that, trusting in Him.

    19:00-19:03

For A, we would say we make it personal through my profession.

    19:06-19:14

Romans 10 says that if we confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved.

    19:16-19:17

    So that's the profession.

    19:18-19:21

4b) We take it public by being baptized.

    19:25-19:29

That was the very first sermon when we launched last October, wasn't it?

    19:30-19:32

    Jesus said, "Go and" what?

    19:36-19:39

"Make disciples." Teaching them, baptizing them.

    19:40-19:42

But baptism is part of it.

    19:42-19:43

We'll talk a little bit more about that this morning.

    19:46-19:55

And then number five, "Daily yield my will." Or you could say, "Die to self." It's the same thing.

    19:55-20:00

Daily, I yield my will, allowing God to work in me and through me.

    20:01-20:02

That's what the Christian life is.

    20:03-20:04

    It's every day.

    20:06-20:07

    Yielding my will.

    20:09-20:11

Well, back to our text here.

    20:13-20:20

Verse 36, and as they were going along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, see, here is water.

    20:21-20:22

What prevents me from being baptized?

    20:24-20:28

Now, in the Greek, the word for baptism simply means to immerse.

    20:30-20:33

And it's a picture of the spiritual rebirth process.

    20:34-20:40

So we have to understand that because there's all kind of crazy views about what baptism is and what it isn't, what it does and what it doesn't do.

    20:40-20:43

And you see, baptism is like a wedding ring.

    20:45-20:47

Now, I have a wedding ring on.

    20:47-20:49

This thing doesn't make me married.

    20:52-20:52

    Right.

    20:54-20:56

But it says that I have been married.

    20:56-20:57

    It's a picture.

    20:59-21:01

If this was the thing that made me married.

    21:03-21:08

I could take my wedding ring off and set it down somewhere and some kid could come along and put it on and say, well, now I'm married to Aaron.

    21:10-21:11

And I'm like, good luck with that kid.

    21:12-21:14

But no, no, no, no, no, no.

    21:14-21:14

    That's sorry.

    21:14-21:16

I tried to stop that before it came out.

    21:17-21:17

    I really did.

    21:19-21:41

I'm sorry. Can we erase that from the from the file? Okay, thank you. We have an A+ editing team. Dan Thompson's giving me a thumbs up. And Alicia's gonna be like, "Oh no, you're not going to erase that." But understand that the wedding ring doesn't make me married. It means I have been married. And baptism is the same way.

    21:41-21:50

Baptism is the public profession of the personal decision to follow Jesus.

    21:53-22:09

Just as at my wedding, I announced before God and before man, I am dedicating my life in marriage to this person.

    22:12-22:14

Baptism is sort of that same idea.

    22:14-22:22

You're making a public announcement before God and before others that you are giving yourself to Jesus Christ.

    22:23-22:29

And just as there's a lot of pictures and symbolism in a wedding, right?

    22:29-22:37

You have the white wedding dress, And then you have the something borrowed, something new, something...

    22:37-22:39

What? I don't know how that goes, sorry.

    22:40-22:41

    How does that go?

    22:43-22:48

Yeah, something old, something new, something borrowed, something...

    22:48-22:49

    Robert Frost wrote that, right?

    22:53-22:53

    Who?

    22:58-23:01

Baptism is the public profession of the personal decision to follow Jesus.

    23:03-23:19

And then pick up in verse 37, you're like, "Oh, my Bible doesn't have verse 37." And some of your Bibles, it might be footnoted at the bottom, because the Bibles you have in your hand were compiled from 20-some thousand manuscripts that have been found.

    23:19-23:22

Some manuscripts had that verse in it, some didn't.

    23:22-23:26

And it's really not a deal breaker verse by any stretch of the imagination.

    23:28-23:30

But we're just we're going to read it.

    23:32-23:54

Verse 37, "And Philip said, 'If you believe with all your heart, you may.' And he replied, 'I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.'" Back up to verse 38, "And he commanded the chariot to stop, And they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

    23:55-23:57

    So Philip explains Christ.

    23:58-24:08

The eunuch accepted Christ, and Philip looked for a response, just as God does.

    24:11-24:13

Understand that there is a sense of urgency.

    24:15-24:19

In this message that Philip gave to the eunuch, did you see the urgency?

    24:19-24:20

    Look back at the text.

    24:23-24:29

He shares the gospel with them in verse 36, the eunuchs like there's water right here.

    24:30-24:31

He had to have sensed that urgency.

    24:33-24:39

He didn't say, when I get back home, you know, maybe I'll schedule something three months down the road or, you know, let me.

    24:40-24:42

They were still on the way.

    24:42-24:44

    Water. Let's do this.

    24:45-24:46

I love that sense of urgency.

    24:46-24:48

Let's just do it. Let's get it done.

    24:48-24:52

Here's water. Let's do it now.

    24:56-24:58

Now, some of you have never made this step.

    25:00-25:02

But I want to encourage you as we look at some questions here.

    25:04-25:07

I want you to understand the baptism biblically.

    25:08-25:12

as step one. Baptism is step one.

    25:14-25:16

And you might say, can you support that biblically?

    25:17-25:22

Well, if you go on our website, I wrote a whole blog about this in order to keep this sermon under three hours.

    25:23-25:33

But I just sat down with my Bible and I went through the book of Acts and everywhere I saw baptized, I just wrote a little couple of sentence paraphrase of what was happening.

    25:33-25:36

And you see the same theme over and over and over.

    25:37-26:08

Somebody preaches the message of the gospel, the people who hear it believe in Jesus Christ, and then immediately They were baptized on the spot. Let's do this now In fact an unbaptized Christian is foreign to the New Testament, it's just foreign to the New Testament So when I ask you if you made this step you see I this is a yes or no You know some sermons when I see you know if I say, you know, are you loving your wife?

    26:10-26:23

Well, yeah, I think I am I kind of try to do a good job and you know Maybe you allot yourself some gray area. There's no gray area here. Have you been baptized? Yes or no?

    26:26-26:37

Have you been If yes, then I want you to pray for the people there's people in this room right now that need to take this step I want you to pray for them if you've been baptized as a believer.

    26:37-26:43

And if not, let's close by looking at four questions.

    26:45-26:46

Four questions we're going to answer.

    26:47-26:47

    What is baptism?

    26:48-26:49

    Who is it for?

    26:50-26:51

    What is its purpose?

    26:52-26:54

And when should a person be baptized?

    26:56-26:56

    What is baptism?

    26:58-26:59

    What is baptism?

    26:59-27:06

Here's the best, succinct, biblical definition, taking the whole counsel of Scripture, of what baptism is.

    27:07-27:24

Baptism is a visible—write this down, this is important—baptism is a visible, God-chosen, God-commanded response to our faith.

    27:24-27:25

I'm going to say that again.

    27:27-27:37

is a visible, God-chosen, God-commanded response to our faith.

    27:39-27:42

Just breaking that down very quickly, it's visible first of all means we can see it.

    27:43-27:46

It means it's something that you can physically see.

    27:47-27:50

It's God-chosen meaning it's something that He came up with.

    27:50-28:01

Understand, it wasn't, you know, Martin Luther's idea or John Calvin's idea or John Wesley's idea or some church or some theologian from 300 years ago decided, "I got an idea.

    28:02-28:08

When somebody gives their life to Christ, we'll throw them in water." That wasn't a church's or a person's idea.

    28:08-28:09

    It was God's idea.

    28:11-28:13

So it's visible, it's God chosen, it's God commanded.

    28:14-28:16

Again, look at that blog on the website.

    28:18-28:25

It's called "Baptism, What's Trending in Scripture?" you see it over what shall we do?

    28:26-28:27

What shall we repent and be baptized?

    28:29-28:30

    It was step one.

    28:31-28:40

It was step one on the spot, visible God chosen, God commanded in that last phrase, it's a response to our faith.

    28:41-28:42

    It's a response.

    28:44-28:45

    Because.

    28:47-28:52

Of what Jesus Christ has done for me, I'm responding with this public announcement.

    28:53-28:54

    So to speak.

    28:58-29:00

So that's what baptism is, who is it for?

    29:01-29:06

Let her be. It is for people who have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

    29:07-29:10

Or you could jot down it is for those who have been born again.

    29:14-29:16

It is for those who have been born again.

    29:17-29:18

Once again, I would refer you to that blog.

    29:19-29:23

You don't see anywhere in Scripture where a baby is baptized, you just don't see it.

    29:23-29:28

You don't see it. You don't see the word baptism and baby in the same verse anywhere in the Bible.

    29:29-29:30

    You just don't see it.

    29:35-29:42

It's only for people who, by faith, have received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and been born again.

    29:45-29:48

When my son Owen was born, he was born five weeks early.

    29:50-29:52

    He weighed 10 pounds.

    29:53-29:54

He was a 10 pound preemie.

    29:55-29:58

So, you know, I'm in the delivery room and I'm expecting this little bundle of joy.

    29:59-30:00

You know, the little bundle of joy?

    30:01-30:05

I'm expecting them to come and say, "Mr. Miller, here's your little bundle of joy." It wasn't like that.

    30:06-30:09

    It was, "Congratulations, Mr. Miller.

    30:11-30:14

"It's a boy." And it was like the ribs on Fred Flintstone's car.

    30:14-30:33

It was just like, "Whoa, he's got a mustache." But I remember that first time I took him in my arms, I said, "Owen, are you ready to receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior right now?" And he didn't answer me.

    30:35-30:38

I tried the same thing with Cade when he was born, he didn't answer me.

    30:39-30:41

Well, obviously I'm goofing around, but you get the point.

    30:41-30:42

    Babies can't do that.

    30:42-30:45

Babies can't accept Jesus Christ or reject Jesus Christ.

    30:45-30:46

    Babies can't do that.

    30:48-30:48

    Right?

    30:50-31:02

People ask me all the time, "Well, what about children?" And I just want to caution you parents, you know, that's a case-by-case thing, but we don't encourage very young children to be baptized.

    31:04-31:10

We encourage you to disciple them into, as much as they can, understanding what that means.

    31:11-31:12

    Now, have I baptized kids?

    31:13-31:13

    Yes.

    31:14-31:20

not without a lot of sitting down, talking through, praying through, talking to parents.

    31:21-31:25

That's been my main thing, sitting down with mom and dad saying, "Hey, I want to hear from you.

    31:26-31:35

Do you think your child's ready to be baptized?" But never a child very young, and even then, always after intense counseling.

    31:36-31:40

But we want to encourage kids especially, it should be an adult experience.

    31:41-31:45

Meaning, you know, when you get to that age that you remember it as an adult experience.

    31:45-31:46

    12, 13.

    31:47-31:48

    There's no magic number though.

    31:50-31:55

Again, it's a case by case thing, but we just really are on our guard for young children.

    31:56-31:58

Do you really understand what this means?

    31:58-32:00

Do you understand the implications of the gospel?

    32:01-32:03

Do I believe that people get saved very young?

    32:03-32:04

    Absolutely.

    32:05-32:07

    But again, just caution.

    32:08-32:38

on that. It's for people who've received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. And you might say, "Well, what if I've been baptized?" Well, I would ask you, "Has it been since you believed?" I've had people come to me and say, "Well, you know, I was baptized like five years ago, but I realized I really didn't receive Christ. I just did it because it was like heat of the moment kind of thing, and I got excited, and it was a weepy service thing, and I just..." If you haven't been baptized as a believer, you should be baptized.

    32:42-32:48

Understand this, and I can't emphasize this enough, baptism does not save you.

    32:49-32:52

OK, baptism does not save you.

    32:52-32:54

And there are some churches that teach that baptism does.

    32:55-32:57

But I've had talks with people, unbelievable.

    32:58-33:00

But I've had talks with people who have said.

    33:02-33:05

you know, about baptism being the way that you're saved.

    33:05-33:06

And I've thrown out this scenario.

    33:07-33:10

Well, what if we were talking right now and you weren't a Christian and.

    33:13-33:22

I share the gospel with you and you prayed to receive Christ and we get in my car and we're driving on the way to get baptized and we're both killed in a car accident, what would happen?

    33:22-33:25

I've had people tell me, well, then I'd go to hell.

    33:26-33:26

    Really?

    33:27-33:29

    That's God, right?

    33:29-33:33

That's God up in heaven looking down, going, OK, he prayed to receive Christ.

    33:33-33:37

He's on the way. He's on the way. Oh, man, he was this close to coming to heaven.

    33:37-33:40

    This close. That's unfortunate.

    33:43-33:46

Ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous, baptism does not save you.

    33:49-33:52

You are saved. By God's grace.

    33:54-33:58

And it is your faith, actually faith that God gives you.

    33:59-34:02

that enables you to reach out and grab hold of God's grace.

    34:03-34:04

    That's what saves you.

    34:06-34:09

    Baptism. As a response.

    34:10-34:12

OK, it's the expression that you have been saved.

    34:14-34:19

Like, well, Pastor Jeff, I haven't been baptized, but I really don't know.

    34:19-34:23

Well, here's some excuses, common excuses for not getting baptized.

    34:24-34:25

And let's just get these out of the way.

    34:25-34:29

Okay? Number one, I was baptized as a baby.

    34:31-34:34

    Again, that doesn't mean anything. I'm sorry. I don't...

    34:35-34:38

I was baptized as a baby. It doesn't mean anything.

    34:39-34:41

And to be honest with you, I barely remember it.

    34:43-34:45

It doesn't mean anything. I'm sorry.

    34:46-34:54

You know, to have to... if that shatters a strongly held belief that you've carried with you, but it doesn't mean anything.

    34:55-34:57

Baptizing a baby is nothing more than giving it a bath.

    35:00-35:04

OK, so if you've been baptized as a baby, that doesn't really mean anything.

    35:04-35:13

I'd encourage you. You know, if you've given your life to Jesus Christ, if you've received him, you need to be baptized.

    35:14-35:17

Number two, common excuse for not getting baptized.

    35:17-35:19

I defend my parents, slash family.

    35:20-35:21

    I defend them.

    35:24-35:27

I would never teach you to do anything to directly try to offend anyone.

    35:31-35:33

However, this is a clear commandment from the Lord.

    35:35-35:38

And I would hope that you could sit down with your family and say, "You know what?

    35:40-35:44

This is what I have to do and here's why." It could be an opportunity for you to witness.

    35:45-35:47

But we must obey God rather than men. Amen?

    35:50-35:53

Number three, the common excuse for not getting baptized.

    35:54-35:56

I need to wait until I'm on track spiritually.

    35:58-36:00

I need to wait until I'm on track spiritually.

    36:00-36:04

It's the mindset of, you know what, I've received Christ, but.

    36:06-36:13

I still got a lot of stuff I'm working on here and I don't I really feel like I got to get a lot of stuff together before I get baptized.

    36:15-36:18

If that's your mindset, you will never get baptized.

    36:18-36:27

Right? Because there's always going to be something, you know, what, almost 17 years later, God's still working on me.

    36:28-36:29

There's always going to be something.

    36:33-36:40

You know, it's as if we have the ability to polish ourselves up enough to present ourselves before God in baptism.

    36:40-36:42

    You've completely missed the picture.

    36:43-36:44

That's not the picture of baptism.

    36:45-37:02

It's, "I believe in Christ, I'm yielding my will, I want him to live in me and through me, and I'm making that public profession." Number four, "I don't like being in front of people." I don't like being in front of people.

    37:05-37:07

Well, that is a real concern for some people.

    37:08-37:09

    Some people get shy.

    37:11-37:15

You know, we've done private baptisms.

    37:16-37:30

And here, the Ethiopian eunuch, it wasn't like, you know, Philip's like, "Come on, we're going to drag you to church." But I would encourage you, especially considering our circumstances, we have a baptism service coming up that I'm going to talk more about here in a second.

    37:31-37:35

But we don't have the ability to have a baptistry in here right now.

    37:36-37:39

So that's why we need to take advantage of this opportunity that's before us.

    37:41-37:49

So you're going to be in front of some people who are going to be celebrating what Christ is doing in you.

    37:50-37:54

So I'd encourage you to empower over that.

    37:56-37:57

    You know, nervousness, shyness.

    37:57-38:01

You're not going to be asked to give a sermon or anything like that.

    38:02-38:03

    But we'll talk about that.

    38:03-38:04

Don't let that get in the way.

    38:04-38:06

Do not let that get in the way of your obedience to the Lord.

    38:07-38:07

    For real.

    38:08-38:12

Number five common excuse for not getting baptized.

    38:12-38:14

People say, "I need to pray about it.

    38:15-38:23

I need to pray about it." This might sound shocking, but there are some things you don't need to pray about.

    38:27-38:35

For example, if I said, "You know, I should love my wife, but I'm going to pray about that." What would you say?

    38:36-38:48

Like, "Dude, God says love your wife, love your wife." Or if I got up here some Sunday and said, "You know, I was going to share a message with you from the Bible, but I don't know.

    38:48-38:51

I'm going to pray about that." Preach the word.

    38:53-38:54

Well, baptism is the same thing.

    38:55-38:59

If you've been born again, there's nothing to pray about.

    39:02-39:03

    It's an act of obedience.

    39:03-39:29

to just do it. Right? There's really nothing to pray. God made it very clear, as we've seen in His Word. Two more questions. Letter C is the profession of faith. What is its purpose? It's the profession of faith. Biblically, when somebody gives their lives to Christ, the profession doesn't come from signing a card or walking an aisle or raising your hand.

    39:32-39:36

profession of faith, biblically, is baptism. Again, this is what God chose.

    39:37-39:44

Jot down Romans 6, verses 1 through 5, and you can read that when you get home.

    39:44-39:59

But baptism, God chose baptism for a reason. It's a picture that that water is like a liquid tomb. And when you go under the water, what you're saying is, "I'm dead.

    40:01-40:02

    I'm dead.

    40:03-40:04

    I'm being buried right now.

    40:04-40:05

    This is my funeral.

    40:06-40:06

    I'm dead.

    40:07-40:09

That's what you're saying by going under the water.

    40:10-40:15

And when you come up out of the water, what you're saying is, "I'm alive.

    40:16-40:17

    Jeff Miller died.

    40:21-40:23

Now Jesus Christ is alive in me.

    40:23-40:32

I'm identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ." That's the picture of baptism.

    40:35-40:38

Then finally, when should a person be baptized?

    40:40-40:42

It is to be done immediately upon belief.

    40:44-40:45

    Immediately upon belief.

    40:46-40:47

    Again urgency.

    40:48-40:49

    Urgency, we've talked about that.

    40:49-40:50

    Urgency.

    40:56-41:04

And there are some people here that have been walking with the Lord for quite a while that might be saying, "You know, I haven't done this yet.

    41:06-41:11

I've been walking with the Lord for years and I haven't been baptized." You might be wondering, "Is there an expiration date?

    41:12-41:16

Like there's some kind of a six-month window after?" No, there's not.

    41:16-41:23

I would encourage you, now that you know what the Bible says, you can only act on what you know.

    41:24-41:32

So, when we say urgency, when we say immediately, we're saying we have an opportunity right around the corner this month, March 21st.

    41:33-41:34

    Seize the opportunity.

    41:36-41:45

Again, the announcement's in your bulletin, but we're going to be just down the road a bit at Northway, the Wexford campus.

    41:45-41:57

I've met with the pastor there a couple of times, and they're having, it's a Wednesday night service, March 21st, and it's a night of just some worship music and baptism, and I found out about that, and again, that's why I met with him.

    41:57-42:03

I said, "Hey, I believe that there's some people "in this room that are ready to take that step.

    42:03-42:15

"They've given their lives to Christ, "but they have not been baptized." I said, "Can we get in on that?" And he said, "Absolutely." He said, "We would just be thrilled to have you guys come and be part of that with us.

    42:15-42:21

So we're really thankful to Northway for opening their doors for us that way.

    42:22-42:32

And I want to encourage you, if you've not taken this step, after we close, if we can get ready to, for our closing song.

    42:34-42:38

But as we close the service, I'm going to be just hanging out up front here.

    42:41-42:59

Maybe there's somebody sitting here You're saying, "You know, I'm giving my life to Jesus Christ today." Or maybe there's somebody sitting here saying, "You know, I have given my life to Jesus Christ, but I haven't taken that step of being baptized.

    43:00-43:01

I'm going to be up here.

    43:01-43:02

    Let's talk.

    43:02-43:06

All right, we're going to close in some worship, and I want you to come up.

    43:08-43:09

    Now's the time.

    43:10-43:10

    Okay?

    43:11-43:15

Let me have a prayer and then we'll close our worship service.

    43:18-43:30

Our Father in heaven, I thank you so much for the picture that you've given us in baptism.

    43:32-43:36

What a graphic picture it is, a picture of our own funeral.

    43:40-43:43

to identify with the death and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    43:46-43:56

And Father, we know that you've never been about a religious act being the substance.

    44:00-44:02

We know, Father, that salvation comes from your grace.

    44:04-44:15

But your Word makes it very clear that when we are recipients of your grace, our profession is to be done in baptism.

    44:18-44:30

So Father, right now I pray for the people sitting in this room, and I know there are several right now who have been wrestling through this and have not taken this step.

    44:30-44:44

Father, I pray that there would just be a celebration of getting it done to stand up and testify to your grace and mercy that you poured out in Christ.

    44:48-44:53

Glorify your name, Father, in this way, we pray through Christ.

    44:53-44:53

    Amen.
