Discernment

Wake Up!

Introduction:

3 Reasons to Stop Hitting the Snooze Button (Micah 3:1-12):

  1. Your Sin is worse than you think. (Micah 3:1-4)
  2. False teachers are trying to Manipulate you. (Micah 3:5-8)

1 Timothy 3:1-7 - The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

  3. Being a little Religious won't help you. (Micah 3:9-12)

Jeremiah 26:17-19 - And certain of the elders of the land arose and spoke to all the assembled people, saying, “Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and said to all the people of Judah: ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, “‘Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.’ Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear the LORD and entreat the favor of the LORD, and did not the LORD relent of the disaster that he had pronounced against them? But we are about to bring great disaster upon ourselves.”

Open up your Bibles to the book of Micah, and we'll be looking, excuse me, at chapter three this week.

    00:54-01:08

If I seemed a little out of it last week, maybe it was because a few days prior to last Sunday, I was mowing and I hit a yellowjackets nest.

    01:09-01:10

Have you ever done that, ladies and gentlemen?

    01:11-01:14

A show of hands, how many people, okay.

    01:15-01:19

So you know, I got stung somewhere around 30 times.

    01:21-01:33

And, you know, after the initial Yellow Jacket attack, I had one thing on my mind.

    01:35-01:48

I said, "They're all gonna die." And I went in the garage and I got the can, you know, the deadly shaving cream, you know what I'm talking about?

    01:49-01:50

    (mimics shaving cream spraying)

    01:50-01:51

    And it foams up.

    01:52-01:58

So I went and I got it and I'm like ready to unleash my wrath.

    01:58-02:03

And Erin goes, "No, no, no, you have to wait "till it gets dark when they're all in a nest." And she was right.

    02:04-02:07

She goes, "You have to wait." She was right.

    02:08-02:14

So until then, I just stood and gave the nest dirty looks.

    02:14-02:18

    I'm like, it's coming, it's coming.

    02:20-02:23

Well, then it started to get dark.

    02:23-02:24

    I could wait no longer.

    02:26-02:29

And I filled that nest up with that deadly foam.

    02:31-02:33

But somehow it just wasn't enough.

    02:34-02:36

So I went and I got a book of matches.

    02:38-02:39

And I lit that foam on fire.

    02:40-02:41

    This is a true story.

    02:41-02:43

I lit that foam on fire.

    02:47-02:55

And I thought for a second, you know, we're right in the middle of this series on Micah and we're talking about God's judgment.

    02:56-02:59

And for a second there, I felt like God.

    03:01-03:10

Like, they obviously hated me despite allowing them to live in my yard.

    03:10-03:13

And I poured out my judgment.

    03:14-03:16

I'm like, wow, I'm really like God, but then it hit me.

    03:19-03:21

Do you know what I didn't think at the time?

    03:24-03:40

What I didn't think was, before I come and exterminate them, if only there was a way that I could become a Yellow Jacket and go and tell them about the judgment that's coming.

    03:42-03:50

And maybe even lay down my yellow jacket life so that they could be spared from the wrath that was coming.

    03:51-03:52

    I didn't think that.

    03:53-03:58

And I realized maybe I'm not as much thinking like God in that moment as I thought.

    03:59-04:01

Because that's what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about.

    04:03-04:08

as God came to save us from His own wrath.

    04:13-04:14

    We're talking about judgment here.

    04:16-04:28

Yes, it's coming, but we saw in Romans one, when God, or when a culture, when a nation rejects God, God abandons them.

    04:30-04:31

Talked about that a few weeks ago.

    04:31-04:50

And the question in Micah is, "What do I do when my nation's facing judgment?" On Micah chapter 1, we learned that we should be mourning over the condition of the lost and the coming judgment.

    04:51-04:57

And then last week, we saw in the midst of it, there's going to be preachers stand up preaching a false gospel.

    04:57-04:59

We need to learn how to discern people.

    05:00-05:01

We need to learn how to discern.

    05:02-05:06

Today, Micah's message is very simple.

    05:08-05:08

    We gotta wake up.

    05:10-05:11

We have got to wake up.

    05:13-05:16

Let's bow our heads, I'm gonna ask for you to pray for me and I will pray for you.

    05:18-05:26

As we approach God's Word together, this is very serious and we wanna make sure that, we wanna make sure we get it right.

    05:28-05:29

    Please pray for me.

    06:00-06:03

Father, we just ask now that you open our hearts up to receive your Word.

    06:05-06:10

And there are parts of your Word that are easier to hear than others.

    06:14-06:14

    But it's all your Word.

    06:15-06:20

We can't pick and choose what we want to hear, what we want to preach, what we want to believe.

    06:25-06:31

And I pray, Father, today that we would approach Micah chapter three the same way we'd approach John chapter three.

    06:33-06:38

Give us reverence and an eagerness to apply.

    06:39-06:41

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    06:43-06:46

And all of God's people said, amen.

    06:48-06:48

    Amen.

    06:49-06:54

How many people here by show of hands are snoozers?

    06:54-07:02

And what I mean is when that alarm goes off, whether you have an old school clock or it's on your phone, you hit the snooze button.

    07:02-07:04

Show of hands, how many people are snoozers?

    07:05-07:08

You know what would be really fun is to see who here hits the snooze button the most.

    07:09-07:10

I don't know if we have time for that.

    07:11-07:13

Taylor, how many times do you typically hit the snooze button?

    07:14-07:14

    Just one.

    07:15-07:17

Oh, your kids wake you up.

    07:17-07:20

Yes, yes, you are in that stage of life, aren't you?

    07:21-07:28

Well, you know, what I found is sometimes it's a lot easier to hit the snooze button than other times, right?

    07:29-07:37

Like if it's a morning when you don't have to go to work, you just keep hitting that snooze.

    07:38-07:44

But you know, it's a lot harder to hit the snooze when you know that you have a big event that day, right?

    07:45-07:50

Like maybe you have a job interview, maybe you're preaching at the church.

    07:52-07:55

And you know, like, no, no, I can't hit the snooze.

    07:55-07:57

    I gotta wake up.

    07:57-08:04

No, I have to wake up because something too serious is before me today.

    08:04-08:07

I just can't snooze through it.

    08:11-08:13

And really that's the message of Micah chapter three.

    08:15-08:19

Because you're gonna see as we go through the text, he doesn't really cover new ground.

    08:20-08:32

He talks about the same subjects that we talked about in chapter 2, but he's doubling down on the intensity.

    08:33-08:34

    Why?

    08:35-08:42

Well, preachers get this, and I know parents get this.

    08:43-08:51

Parents, have you ever said something to your kids, like serious, and you're trying to and have this serious talk and they're just kinda like, meh, has that ever happened, parent?

    08:52-08:57

I don't want you to raise your hand now, but you're trying to say something serious and they're just kinda like, meh.

    09:00-09:03

And you're like, no, no, no, you need to listen to me.

    09:03-09:06

    This is serious, pay attention.

    09:09-09:13

Maybe you aren't recognizing the gravity of this situation here.

    09:14-09:16

And that's what Micah does in chapter three here.

    09:17-09:19

He's saying, stop hitting the snooze button.

    09:21-09:23

This is deadly serious what we're talking about.

    09:24-09:25

    You need to wake up.

    09:28-09:29

    And you're like, right, right.

    09:31-09:31

    They need to wake up.

    09:32-09:33

    No church.

    09:34-09:36

No, we need to wake up.

    09:38-09:40

You know, people talk about revival in the land.

    09:42-09:43

    Where's that gonna start?

    09:46-09:47

    It's gonna start here.

    09:49-09:52

So on your outline today, wake up, wake up.

    09:54-09:56

Three reasons to stop hitting the snooze button.

    09:57-09:59

The first one is this, write this down.

    10:02-10:04

Your sin is worse than you think.

    10:06-10:07

Your sin is worse than you think.

    10:07-10:09

    Look at Micah chapter three.

    10:09-10:18

He says, "And I said, 'Here you heads of Jacob "and rulers of the house of Israel.'" Is it not for you to know justice?

    10:19-10:22

You who hate the good and love the evil.

    10:24-10:31

Micah says, you're the leaders of God's covenant nation, Israel, you should know better.

    10:33-10:34

    You should know God's ways.

    10:35-10:41

He goes, but the problem is you hate what's good, but you love what's evil.

    10:41-10:47

I'm like, wow, if there's a description of our culture in America today, right there it is.

    10:49-11:11

He goes on, he says, "You who tear the skin from off my people and their flesh from off their bones, who eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces, and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron." That's a callback to the covetousness we talked about in chapter two.

    11:11-11:17

He's describing how they consumed the victims and the possessions of the victims.

    11:17-11:19

We're gonna get back to this in just a second.

    11:19-11:20

    But look at verse four.

    11:21-11:24

"Then they will cry to the Lord, "but he will not answer them.

    11:25-11:33

"He will hide his face from them at that time "because they have made their deeds evil." Beginning in verse four, they will cry to the Lord.

    11:33-11:36

That word for cry in Hebrew is not the cry of repentance.

    11:37-11:38

    Like, God, God, I'm sorry.

    11:39-11:40

I'm so sorry for what I've done.

    11:40-11:41

    God, please forgive me.

    11:41-11:43

It's not that kind of cry.

    11:44-11:47

This Hebrew word is actually a distress cry.

    11:48-11:52

It's a cry of God, God, help us, God, please do something.

    11:52-11:53

    And Micah says, no, no.

    11:54-11:56

God's not gonna do anything on that day.

    11:57-12:00

You're gonna cry for help and he's going to ignore you.

    12:03-12:04

    Why?

    12:05-12:07

Because God rejects those who reject him.

    12:07-12:09

That was the sermon a few weeks ago.

    12:10-12:14

So, Mike, you hear his saying in these first four verses, "Listen up, listen up.

    12:15-12:17

You want to violently consume God's people?

    12:17-12:28

Well, when judgment comes and you beg God for help, He's going to have nothing to do with you." But I want you to, here's what I want you to do.

    12:28-12:30

I don't want you to look back at these verses.

    12:30-12:31

Here's what I want you to do.

    12:31-12:33

I want you to close your eyes for a second.

    12:33-12:37

I'm going to read, I'm going to read part of verse two and then verse three again.

    12:38-12:41

Close your eyes and I just want you to hear this.

    12:41-12:48

Sometimes we kind of fly through the text and ignore the heaviness of it.

    12:50-12:52

Close your eyes, just listen to this.

    12:54-13:02

He says, "Who tear the skin from off my people "and their flesh from off their bones.

    13:04-13:20

"Who eat the flesh of my people and flay their skin from off them, and break their bones in pieces, and chop them up like meat in a pot, like flesh in a cauldron.

    13:24-13:31

You can open your eyes now, but you might be like, Micah, whoa, dude, dude, why are you being so graphic?

    13:35-13:47

"Why are you talking like this, Micah?" He's saying, "Wake up." He's saying, "Your sin is worse than you think it is." You see, we talked about this last week.

    13:47-13:49

They were taking land from people.

    13:50-13:59

People in authority were abusing their authority and they were taking land and fields and houses from innocent people.

    14:01-14:03

And here's the thing with sin.

    14:05-14:10

We are all, when it comes to our favorite sin, we're self-justified.

    14:11-14:12

    We excuse it.

    14:12-14:14

And that's what these people did.

    14:14-14:15

    They're like, hey, hey.

    14:16-14:18

Yeah, okay, so we're taking land from people.

    14:18-14:20

    Look, it's just business.

    14:21-14:23

    It's all being done legally.

    14:23-14:25

I mean, look, everybody does business like this.

    14:26-14:31

And you know what these people, if they were in our position, they would do it exactly the same.

    14:32-14:34

I'm sure it was justified in their minds.

    14:37-14:53

And Mike is coming along here and he goes, "Hey, do you know how God sees what you're doing?" From God's perspective, people, he says, "God sees you like wild animals ripping a carcass apart.

    14:54-14:55

    "That's how God sees it.

    14:57-15:07

"God sees it like butchers hacking up flesh throwing it in a pot, it's a really grotesque picture.

    15:10-15:14

This is the wake up call because church, we're just like these leaders.

    15:15-15:18

We refuse to see sin for what it is.

    15:20-15:25

And we are the masters of justifying our favorite sin.

    15:28-15:37

And in our culture, We're the masters of making evil sound good.

    15:38-15:40

    We make it sound good.

    15:40-15:41

    Like what do you mean?

    15:43-15:45

    Let's talk about abortion.

    15:47-15:48

    Self justified, right?

    15:49-15:52

How do we make that sound good in our culture?

    15:52-15:55

We say, hey, abortion, you know what the real issue is?

    15:55-15:57

    It's about a woman's choice.

    15:57-15:58

    That's the issue.

    15:59-16:05

We're simply removing unwanted tissue from a woman.

    16:09-16:10

You know what the reality is?

    16:13-16:22

We're taking the most innocent and vulnerable people in our country, about to be born babies, and we're stabbing and hacking them, and we're murdering them in the womb.

    16:23-16:25

We're violently taking their life away.

    16:28-16:30

Can't we see it for what it is?

    16:32-16:34

Can't we see it how God sees it?

    16:38-16:42

We've talked before about perversion in our land.

    16:42-16:46

Again, we make evil sound good because we're so self-justified in it.

    16:46-16:48

What do we say regarding perversion?

    16:49-16:56

We say things like, "Love is love." No one can tell somebody who they can love.

    17:01-17:02

    The reality is this.

    17:04-17:12

We've taken the beautiful gift of intimacy that God has given to married people, and we've twisted it into sick and unnatural things.

    17:21-17:23

They're like, "Yeah, we sure have.

    17:25-17:26

    What about our sins?

    17:28-17:35

You can see the church, we are the masters of pointing it to things, the sins that other people do that we don't do, and shame on them.

    17:35-17:36

    What about our sins?

    17:38-17:40

Are we willing to see our sins the way God sees them?

    17:43-17:44

What about the sins that happen in the church?

    17:45-17:48

Sins like pornography, making evil sound good, right?

    17:48-17:49

    What do we say?

    17:49-17:51

All men have needs, boys will be boys.

    17:51-17:53

    It doesn't really hurt anybody.

    17:57-18:05

Except the young girls that are trafficked and abused, whose bodies are used as tools for lustful gratification.

    18:09-18:13

And for the people that view it, it turns women into objects.

    18:16-18:18

    It damages marriage relationships.

    18:19-18:24

And it turns otherwise strong, confident men into weak addicts.

    18:24-18:25

    That's what it does.

    18:25-18:26

    That's the reality.

    18:31-18:32

    What about our sins?

    18:34-18:35

What about the sin of slander?

    18:37-18:38

We make evil sound good, don't we?

    18:40-18:41

    Oh, you know, girls talk.

    18:43-18:48

Just sharing the news, you know what I, it's just, let me, it's just stuff that I heard, you know, it's just chit-chat.

    18:51-18:55

The reality of slander is you're making someone think negatively about somebody else.

    19:01-19:03

    Slander's a cancer that spreads.

    19:05-19:06

    or destroying somebody's reputation.

    19:10-19:20

I could go on and on and on of the sins that, like in Micah's day, we need to take a fresh look at and see how grotesque they really are.

    19:20-19:28

I can talk about the horrors of addiction, the bitterness of unforgiveness.

    19:33-19:38

Those of you who own a business, engaging in dishonest business practices, knowingly ripping people off.

    19:41-19:42

    But church, you know what?

    19:42-19:53

We can, all day long in the church, we can bemoan drag queen story hour, and we can bemoan government corruption, but when are we gonna take our sin seriously?

    19:56-19:57

And you're like, yeah, you know what?

    19:57-19:59

You're right about the government and the drag queens.

    19:59-20:00

    They need to wake up.

    20:00-20:02

No, you need to wake up.

    20:02-20:03

and I need to wake up.

    20:07-20:09

Because your sin's worse than you think it is.

    20:11-20:13

Can you see it how God sees it?

    20:16-20:22

Second reason to stop hitting the snooze button is because false teachers are trying to manipulate you.

    20:24-20:25

    Look at verse five.

    20:26-20:33

He says, "Thus says the Lord concerning the prophets." We talked about this last week.

    20:33-20:34

    Here it is again.

    20:34-20:36

    Who lead my people astray?

    20:37-20:46

Who cry peace when they have something to eat, but declare war against him who puts nothing into their mouths?

    20:48-20:49

    This fires God up.

    20:49-20:55

People are out looking for spiritual direction and they are misled and manipulated.

    20:56-20:57

    Wake up.

    20:58-20:59

    Wake up.

    20:59-21:01

are preachers that are driven by greed.

    21:03-21:04

And that's what he says here.

    21:04-21:05

Did you see that in verse five?

    21:05-21:12

That there's peace, there's peace for you if you pay, but if you don't pay, there's war.

    21:12-21:13

    Like, what does that mean?

    21:14-21:15

    It means something like this.

    21:15-21:23

It means somebody getting up and saying, "Hey, you need to, look, you need to support your giving "to this church to support me because I am the man of God.

    21:24-21:31

"I am bringing unto you the word of the Lord, "so you need to make sure that as the man of God, "you are supporting me.

    21:31-21:36

"And if you do make sure that I have everything that I want, "God's gonna bless you.

    21:38-21:52

"And if you don't give to me, "then God's hand is gonna be against you." Do you think there's manipulation from the pulpits?

    21:54-22:00

Do you think there's manipulation from your TV preachers or your favorite preacher you listen to on the internet?

    22:04-22:05

    Better wake up.

    22:07-22:08

    Look at verse six.

    22:09-22:13

He says, "Therefore it shall be night to you.

    22:15-22:20

"Therefore it shall be night to you without vision "and darkness to you without divination.

    22:20-22:25

"The sun shall go down on the prophets "and the day shall be black over them.

    22:25-22:30

"The seers shall be disgraced, "and the diviners shall be put to shame.

    22:31-22:38

"They shall all cover their lips, "for there is no answer from God." He says judgment's gonna descend like night darkness.

    22:38-22:40

He goes, there's not gonna be a word from God for that.

    22:41-22:44

Now listen, he's talking about seers and diviners and all of that.

    22:45-22:54

I understand that Micah, in this passage, he wasn't trying to make some kind of a distinction over what is a legitimate form of revelation and what is not.

    22:55-22:59

He's just saying, look, regardless of the method, they're not gonna get anything from God.

    23:01-23:02

And ultimately, they're gonna be put to shame.

    23:04-23:20

Verse eight, he goes, but as for me, I am filled with power, with the spirit of the Lord, and with justice and might, to declare to Jacob his transgressions, and to Israel his sins.

    23:22-23:23

Mike, it does a little contrast here.

    23:25-23:28

Say, look, you know what, Israel, I'm swimming against the stream here.

    23:30-23:32

He says, I have spirit power.

    23:33-23:37

He says, and I have the power to declare sin because that's the issue.

    23:39-23:41

And you gotta watch out for the preacher that never talks about sin.

    23:44-23:45

    All right?

    23:46-23:48

Discernment, we talked about that last week.

    23:50-23:52

Let's take it up another level.

    23:53-24:02

Discernment's important that not only you know the truth, but discernment's also important so that you're not being taken advantage of.

    24:06-24:11

Listen, you have to evaluate the message of the preacher.

    24:13-24:14

    100%.

    24:15-24:19

But you also have to evaluate the character of the preacher.

    24:19-24:28

And if you read your Bible, the Bible really seems to place the premium on the preacher's character.

    24:29-24:30

    Here's what I mean.

    24:30-24:31

Let's just look at this real quick.

    24:31-24:32

    1 Timothy chapter three.

    24:33-24:34

    I'm gonna fly through this.

    24:36-24:39

We could spend a whole series on this, but I just want you to see something here.

    24:41-24:42

    This saying is trustworthy.

    24:42-24:51

If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, that's elder, pastor, shepherd, says he desires a noble task.

    24:53-25:08

Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, hospitable, I'm sorry, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.

    25:08-25:13

He must manage his own household well with all dignity, keeping his children submissive.

    25:13-25:17

For if someone does not know how to manage his own household how will he care for God's church?

    25:19-25:26

He must not be a recent convert or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.

    25:27-25:36

Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

    25:36-25:38

Keep those verses up there, please, AV team.

    25:39-25:40

What I want you to see here is this.

    25:42-25:51

In this description of the pastor, of the overseer, of the shepherd of the church, do you notice there's one statement about teaching there?

    25:52-25:55

It's important, but there's one statement.

    25:56-26:02

And I counted, and look, my wife's the math person in our family, so I didn't ask her to check this, but you can count.

    26:03-26:10

I counted 13 other descriptions that had to do with his character.

    26:10-26:11

    Do you see that?

    26:13-26:13

    Why?

    26:17-26:19

    Because character shapes motives.

    26:20-26:21

    That's why.

    26:21-26:27

And someone who knows and loves Jesus Christ wants you to know and love Jesus Christ.

    26:29-26:36

But someone lacking character is going to use the word of God to try to get something from you.

    26:39-26:39

    Wake up.

    26:42-26:44

Who are you getting your messages from?

    26:46-26:50

Because there's a lot of preachers out there who are going to try to manipulate you.

    26:54-26:56

Three reasons to stop hitting the snooze button.

    26:57-27:02

Well, your sin's worse than you think it is. There's false preachers out there trying to manipulate you.

    27:02-27:03

    The third reason is this.

    27:04-27:07

You need to wake up because being a little religious won't help you.

    27:09-27:11

Being a little religious won't help you.

    27:12-27:21

Go back to verse 9, he says, "Hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel." Back to them.

    27:22-27:38

"Who detest justice and make crooked all that is straight, who build Zion with blood and Jerusalem with iniquity." You know what occurred to me this week as I was studying this, there's a lot of people that are like, you know, preachers should never talk about politics, right?

    27:40-27:41

Should never talk about politics in the church.

    27:41-27:42

    That's a separate thing.

    27:42-27:45

We should be dealing with the spiritual things here.

    27:45-27:47

And preachers should never address politics.

    27:48-27:52

And I was reading this this week, I thought, you know, Micah didn't seem to think that way.

    27:54-27:58

Micah wasn't shy about saying, corruption in the leadership.

    27:59-28:11

And listen, I'm not saying church needs to turn to CNN or like the Hannity Hour or Wolf Blitzen or whatever his name is. I'm not saying that.

    28:12-28:20

What I am saying is this, if the church isn't helping you process what's going on in our country's leadership through the word of God, then who's going to?

    28:22-28:33

Look at verse 11. He says, "Its heads give judgment for a bribe. Its priests teach for for a price, it's profits, practice divination for money.

    28:34-28:35

And Mike is like, "You're all corrupt.

    28:36-28:36

    You're all corrupt.

    28:37-28:39

The only thing that motivates you is money.

    28:39-28:50

Every single one of you is walking around with your hand out, trying to squeeze a nickel from people." How could they do that?

    28:52-28:55

Here it is, here it is, look, look at verse 11 again.

    28:56-29:01

Says, "Yet they lean on the Lord and say, 'There's not the Lord in the midst of us.

    29:01-29:08

No disaster shall come upon us.'" Didn't we hear this before?

    29:09-29:12

Oh yeah, back in chapter two, verse six.

    29:14-29:16

    Disgrace will not overtake us.

    29:16-29:19

They just keep preaching the same trash message.

    29:22-29:24

They think that God is on their side.

    29:24-29:25

    Do you see that?

    29:26-29:29

He says, if they lean on the Lord, they're like, yeah, everything's fine.

    29:30-29:31

    God's on our side.

    29:31-29:33

Nothing's gonna happen to us, come on.

    29:33-29:34

    Nothing's gonna happen to us.

    29:34-29:35

    We're the people of God.

    29:39-29:41

    And Micah here says, wrong.

    29:44-29:45

    God's gonna deal with you.

    29:47-29:48

    Look at verse 12.

    29:48-29:58

Therefore, because of you, Zion shall be plowed as a field, Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, in the mountain of the house, wooded height.

    30:03-30:11

Micah says, "You guys think you're okay because you got a little religion in you, right?" And I echo that to say, what about you, church?

    30:11-30:14

Do you think your sin is okay just because you come to church?

    30:16-30:20

You think, "I'm not gonna face any consequences for my sin.

    30:21-30:24

Nobody's perfect, and I have this sin that I've been hanging onto for a long time.

    30:25-30:26

I'm not gonna face any consequences.

    30:30-30:40

Micah says, "Wake up." Because when you say that you lean on the Lord, that makes you more accountable, not less.

    30:43-31:01

Micah says, "Being a little religious "is not going to help you." So we see in verse 12, Micah's message to Israel, he is, it's coming, total ruin.

    31:05-31:08

Sometimes that's not even enough to wake people up.

    31:12-31:13

    But will we wake up?

    31:19-31:33

Did you know that Micah's message right here in verse 12 saved the prophet Jeremiah a hundred years later?

    31:34-31:40

A hundred years after Micah preached this, this very message saved Jeremiah.

    31:40-31:41

    Did you know that?

    31:44-31:46

Jeremiah chapter 26, I'm gonna give you the paraphrase.

    31:46-31:55

You can go ahead and read this later if you want, But Jeremiah 26, God had Jeremiah preaching in the temple courts, repent or face the consequences.

    31:56-31:57

    That sounds familiar.

    31:58-32:06

Well, Jeremiah 26 says the priests and the prophets and the people all grabbed them and they're like, you're going to die.

    32:08-32:14

And Jeremiah is like, again, this is paraphrasing, Jeremiah is like, God sent me, so not a great idea what you're doing right now.

    32:15-32:18

But I want you to see these verses, Jeremiah 26.

    32:18-32:27

Look at this, it says, "And certain of the elders of the land arose "and spoke to all the assembled people saying," okay, they got Jeremiah there, they're gonna kill him.

    32:29-32:30

"Elders step up," look what they say.

    32:31-32:57

"Micah of Moresheth prophesied in the days of Hezekiah, "king of Judah," 100 years ago, "and said to all the people of Judah, "Thus says the Lord of hosts, "Zion shall be plowed as a field, "Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins "in the mountain of the house, a wooded height." Did Hezekiah, king of Judah and all Judah, put him to death?

    32:59-33:07

Did he not fear the Lord and entreat the favor of the Lord and did not the Lord relent of the disaster that he had pronounced against them?

    33:08-33:13

But we are about to bring great disaster upon ourselves.

    33:16-33:18

    See what the elders said?

    33:18-33:19

    They're like, wait a second.

    33:19-33:25

You realize Hezekiah didn't kill Micah for preaching the way that Jeremiah is preaching.

    33:26-33:32

Hezekiah actually listened to Micah, and God relented.

    33:33-33:41

And they're like, so you know what guys, maybe killing Jeremiah, that might be bad for us.

    33:42-33:50

And Jeremiah was ultimately spared from this execution attempt, and God postponed disaster.

    33:56-33:57

And the reason I share that is this.

    33:58-34:00

I wanna give you a word of encouragement.

    34:03-34:10

Because sometimes you have to say hard things from the Lord to people who don't wanna hear it.

    34:13-34:13

    Like Micah.

    34:16-34:18

Maybe you have to say hard things.

    34:18-34:26

You know, sharing the word of the Lord with someone who doesn't want to hear it, maybe for you, maybe it's an adult wayward child.

    34:29-34:30

    Maybe it's an unsaved coworker.

    34:32-34:35

Maybe it's a stubborn elderly parent.

    34:38-34:52

But you know, I doubt Micah had any idea When he preached this, I doubt he had any idea that his words a century later would save one of the greatest prophets of all time.

    34:56-35:07

And for you, even if it doesn't look like you're sharing God's word has any effect in that moment, you just never know how God's gonna use that down the road.

    35:10-35:12

or worship team would make their way back forward.

    35:12-35:12

    We're gonna pray.

    35:19-35:26

Father in heaven, not a comfortable passage.

    35:28-35:32

It kind of smacks us all right between the eyes.

    35:34-35:37

Father, I pray that that smack wakes us up.

    35:38-35:42

Because Father, even as your church, we've become so complacent.

    35:44-35:52

And we think that just because we're the church and just because we believe and just because we carry a Bible that we're exempt from any consequences for sin.

    35:56-35:59

When your word tells us that you discipline your children.

    36:02-36:11

And it's real easy for us to point at the gross sins of our culture that we're not doing while we justify the gross sins that we are doing.

    36:13-36:31

So Father, I pray today that your word would be our wake-up call to get serious in pursuing you, to get serious in our walks with Christ, to get serious in the way that we view our sin.

    36:32-36:34

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Introduction:

4 Clues You're Hearing a Bad Sermon (Micah 2:1-13):

  1. The sermon Avoids hard truths. (Micah 2:6a)
  2. The sermon doesn't Agree with something God already said. (Micah 2:6b)
  3. The sermon Appeals to the flesh. (Micah 2:6b)
  4. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 - For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

  5. The sermon Attracts non-spiritual people. (Micah 2:11b)

who would eventually become the pastor after me, one time got up to speak, and he said, "You know, God wants to shine his light through you.

    00:56-01:09

And when we take his light that's in you, when we take that light, should we hide that light under a bushel?" Remember that song?

    01:11-01:12

    So I'm like, no.

    01:13-01:25

He's like, yes, because that bushel's gonna catch on fire and it'll make the light brighter and more people will see it.

    01:26-01:28

And then that's when it dawned on me.

    01:30-01:32

I think that he thinks a bushel is a little tree.

    01:35-01:36

    That wasn't a great sermon.

    01:40-01:47

And my point is, you know, sometimes it's easy to tell a bad sermon.

    01:49-01:53

    Other times, not so much.

    01:55-01:58

And that's where we're going in Micah chapter two today.

    01:58-02:01

Just as a quick review, remember we're under God's wrath.

    02:01-02:03

We talked about that a couple of weeks ago.

    02:03-02:10

For us in America, God's wrath isn't something that is coming according to Romans one, God's wrath is something that's here right now.

    02:12-02:15

And last week we explored the question, how does that make you feel?

    02:17-02:18

    Are you apathetic?

    02:20-02:20

    Are you angry?

    02:23-02:27

Are you amused at this thought that God is going to punish sinners?

    02:31-02:32

    Well, you know what's worse?

    02:34-02:45

is the fact that God sends preachers to proclaim his truth so that lost sinners would come back to him.

    02:48-02:53

But those lost sinners would rather listen to false teachers that are preaching bad sermons.

    02:55-02:58

And there are lots of bad sermons being preached in our day.

    03:01-03:07

But I need to ask you, church, Can you tell if a sermon is good or bad?

    03:09-03:12

And when I say bad, I think you understand, I mean unbiblical.

    03:14-03:25

Can you discern if a message is actually from God or if it's something that some guy made up?

    03:27-03:28

    Can you do that?

    03:30-03:39

I'd like you to bow your heads with me, please, and I'm gonna ask that you would please pray for me to communicate God's word faithfully, and I will pray for you to receive it.

    03:48-03:57

Father, I pray right now you'd open our hearts up to receive your word, and that we would be people that are fully dedicated to your word.

    04:03-04:13

Not with some chip-on-our-shoulder, carmogeny way, but with joy, but with much discernment.

    04:15-04:23

Father, you know we live in a day that there's people around every corner saying that they're bringing a message from God, and that can't all be true.

    04:26-04:27

You've given us your words that we would know.

    04:29-04:45

And I pray, Father, that we would read this message from Micah that was preached so many centuries ago, but is just as relevant right here today where we sit.

    04:46-04:47

    We pray in Jesus' name.

    04:47-04:50

And all of God's people said, amen.

    04:51-04:57

Micah chapter two, the first five verses here, Let's just break it down a little chunk at a time to get the flow here.

    04:57-05:02

But the first five verses kind of gets us back to that courtroom scene that we talked about last week.

    05:04-05:09

But the Lord is getting specific with his issues with the people.

    05:09-05:14

You remember last week we saw in chapter one, the issue is idolatry.

    05:16-05:24

But specifically, you know, there's one manifestation of idolatry that God is really fired up about, and that is covetousness.

    05:25-05:35

You go to the New Testament, Colossians 3, 5 tells us that covetousness is idolatry, and it always gets God's attention, all right?

    05:35-05:37

So look at the first couple of verses here.

    05:37-05:43

It says, "Woe to those who devise wickedness "and work evil on their beds.

    05:45-05:49

"When the morning dawns, they perform it "because it is in the power of their hand.

    05:50-05:54

"They covet fields and seize them, and houses, "and take them away.

    05:54-06:10

"They oppress a man and his house, "a man and his inheritance." Micah here is condemning people in power, whether these were political leaders or business leaders, they knew who he was talking about, but these are people who prey on the innocent.

    06:11-06:13

And it's a sickening scene here.

    06:13-06:16

It says, "On their beds," meaning premeditated.

    06:16-06:25

They're laying down to go to sleep at night, And all they're thinking about is how can I get what doesn't belong to me?

    06:26-06:34

How can I legally, and that's in quotes, legally steal from innocent people?

    06:36-06:38

How can I take their livelihoods?

    06:38-06:40

How can I take their children's inheritance?

    06:43-06:44

Like, why would they do that?

    06:46-07:02

Well, he tells you right here in verse one, "because it is in the power of their hand." In other words, if you ask them, "Why are you doing that?" They would say, "Because I can, that's why." They're abusing their authority.

    07:03-07:19

Look at verses three and four, he goes on, "Therefore, thus says the Lord, "behold, against this family I am devising disaster "from which you cannot remove your necks "and you shall not walk haughtily, "For it will be a time of disaster.

    07:19-07:27

"In that day, they shall take up a taunt song against you "and moan bitterly and say, 'We are utterly ruined.

    07:27-07:30

"'He changes the portion of my people.

    07:30-07:31

"'How he removes it from me!

    07:32-07:39

"'To an apostate he allots our fields.'" So God uses their same language.

    07:39-07:41

God invokes eye for an eye.

    07:42-07:43

    Do you see that?

    07:43-07:47

He says, "You are devising to take from people." "Guess what?

    07:48-07:57

"I'm devising to take from you." God says, "I'm going to knock you off your high horse.

    07:58-08:00

"You're not gonna walk around haughtily.

    08:00-08:01

    "You're not gonna be proud.

    08:01-08:10

"I'm gonna knock you down." Eventually, what happened was Assyria conquered the 10 northern tribes in about 722 BC.

    08:11-08:13

I believe that's what he's talking about here.

    08:14-08:23

Verse five, he goes on, he says, "Therefore you will have none to cast the line by lot "in the assembly of the Lord." Cast the line, he's not talking about fishing.

    08:23-08:27

That was a figure of speech to talk about measuring out land parcels.

    08:28-08:35

What he was saying here is this, eventually Israel's gonna be restored, and we're gonna be measuring out parcels of land to divide up among the people, but guess what?

    08:36-08:37

You ain't gonna be part of that.

    08:37-08:39

    You're gonna have nothing.

    08:40-08:41

    That's what he's saying.

    08:43-08:44

    Look at verse six.

    08:46-08:48

Do not preach, thus they preach.

    08:48-08:50

One should not preach of such things.

    08:51-08:52

    Disgrace will not overtake us.

    08:54-08:56

You see, the people were denouncing the true prophets.

    08:56-08:58

This is what I was talking about earlier.

    08:58-09:03

There were people that were saying, hey, you shouldn't be preaching God's wrath.

    09:03-09:04

I mean, come on, come on.

    09:04-09:06

God's not going to punish us.

    09:07-09:09

    We're Israel, we're His people.

    09:09-09:10

He's not going to punish us.

    09:11-09:13

You shouldn't be talking like that.

    09:16-09:23

Well, that's a problem, because you know, it's really hard to repent from sin that's not being preached.

    09:25-09:28

He goes on, verse 7, "Should this be said, O house of Jacob?

    09:29-09:30

    Has the Lord grown impatient?

    09:31-09:38

Are these his deeds?" Do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly?

    09:40-09:43

You see, they were objecting to people who preached the word of God, like Micah.

    09:44-09:51

They're like, "Hey, should you really be preaching "like this, going around, saying God is impatient "and God brings disaster on sinners?

    09:51-10:02

"Come on, come on, Micah, that's not true." And Micah's response right there, "Do not my words do good to him who walks uprightly?" Micah's response is this.

    10:03-10:09

Old Testament Israel, the enjoyment of covenant promises only comes to the people who keep the covenant.

    10:10-10:11

That's how it worked in the old covenant.

    10:12-10:17

But I would say church today, even today, I think there's a principle there for us.

    10:17-10:25

And I would have to ask, why do those who despise God's words expect to receive blessing from God?

    10:25-10:26

    Same principle.

    10:28-10:34

You want God to bless you and do good to you, but his word has no place in your life?

    10:34-10:36

How do you come up with that?

    10:38-10:43

There was just no market for Micah's message.

    10:47-10:48

    But he repeats it.

    10:49-10:52

Verses eight through 10, he says it again, same thing.

    10:52-10:56

"But lately my people have risen up as an enemy.

    10:56-11:00

You strip the rich robe from those who pass by trustingly with no thought of war.

    11:02-11:08

The women of my people, you drive out from their delightful houses, from their young children, you take away my splendor forever.

    11:09-11:17

Arise and go, for this is no place to rest because of the uncleanness that destroys and with a grievous destruction.

    11:20-11:21

    See what he's saying?

    11:21-11:25

He's saying to certain Israelites, you're acting like Israel's enemy.

    11:27-11:28

    That's what you're acting like.

    11:28-11:32

You're coming upon your fellow Israelites who are trusting you.

    11:34-11:35

    You're stealing from them.

    11:36-11:45

So now, God's evicting you because your thuggery has polluted the land.

    11:46-11:47

    Look at verse 11.

    11:50-12:05

He says, "If a man should go about "and utter wind and lies, saying, "I will preach to you of wine and strong drink, "he would be the preacher for this people." Again, it's a problem with preachers.

    12:07-12:08

    Problem with preachers.

    12:08-12:10

We see here, here's how to be a celebrity pastor.

    12:11-12:12

    It's right here.

    12:13-12:15

I mean, I don't know how I missed it all these years.

    12:17-12:25

I've been looking all through the Bible for sermon content, and I don't know, I don't know if I've ever preached a sermon on wine and strong drink.

    12:27-12:28

So I thought about that for today.

    12:30-12:32

Like, how would you like to hear that sermon?

    12:33-12:45

Like if I got up before you today and said, "Today, I'll be preaching from the book of Budweiser." In the beginning, God created the hops and the barley.

    12:48-12:52

You know, greater love has no man than this, that he shares beer with his friends.

    12:55-12:57

Blessed are the intoxicated, for they shall dance well.

    13:00-13:01

    It's foolishness, right?

    13:01-13:02

    It's foolishness.

    13:03-13:04

We can admit that, right, it's foolishness.

    13:05-13:06

    That's what he's saying.

    13:07-13:10

He's like, that's the garbage that you wanna hear.

    13:13-13:13

    It's foolishness.

    13:14-13:17

You don't wanna hear from God, right?

    13:17-13:18

You don't wanna hear from God.

    13:18-13:22

You want somebody to preach something that's gonna make you feel good.

    13:22-13:23

    That's what you want.

    13:25-13:25

    There's a problem.

    13:28-13:31

But as always with these Old Testament prophets, it's not all doom and gloom.

    13:31-13:32

He gives us that glimmer of hope.

    13:32-13:34

Look at verses 12 and 13.

    13:34-13:38

He says, "I will surely assemble all of you, O Jacob.

    13:39-13:41

"I will gather the remnant of Israel.

    13:41-13:49

"I will set them together like sheep in a fold, "like a flock in its pasture, a noisy multitude of men.

    13:50-13:56

"He who opens the breach," that's Jesus, by the way, "goes up before them.

    13:57-14:01

"They break through and pass the gate, going out by it.

    14:01-14:12

"Their king passes on before them the Lord at their hand." So he speaks of a day when Israel is going to be assembled and then liberated from confinement.

    14:14-14:20

Many scholars believe that that was fulfilled in a particular event in about 701 BC.

    14:22-14:25

And we're not gonna read it now, but I'll break these references down.

    14:25-14:27

You know, the events talked about three times in the Bible.

    14:28-14:30

    It's talked about in 2 Kings 18 and 19.

    14:31-14:38

It's talked about in 2 Chronicles 32, and it's talked about in Isaiah 36 and 37.

    14:38-14:43

Short version, Jews fled to Jerusalem, Jerusalem under siege from the Assyrians.

    14:44-14:50

King Hezekiah prayed, and God killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers while they slept.

    14:51-14:56

And that whole scene foreshadows the day that the Messiah is going to protect Israel.

    14:57-15:01

At the end of the tribulation, Zechariah 14 talks about it, Revelation 12.

    15:02-15:06

This is a foreshadowing when God helps Israel flee from the Antichrist.

    15:07-15:10

So this prophecy had a near and a far fulfillment.

    15:12-15:13

    That's Micah chapter two.

    15:15-15:18

And what do we learn from Micah chapter two, my friends?

    15:18-15:19

    Here's what we learn.

    15:19-15:24

That Israel in Micah's day had the same fatal flaw that we have in our day.

    15:27-15:28

    Lack of discernment.

    15:29-15:32

Like, didn't we just have a sermon series on this?

    15:32-15:32

    Yeah.

    15:34-15:35

And we're gonna have another sermon on this.

    15:36-15:36

    Why?

    15:37-15:42

Because I've told you before, that's my biggest concern for this church, is lack of discernment.

    15:44-15:53

Gobbling up anything that's being spewed, as long as it's called Christian, as long as there's a Bible verse kind of attached to it, well, I'm gonna believe this and follow this.

    15:54-15:56

    You gotta have discernment.

    16:00-16:08

And the people in Micah's day, as Micah pointed out humorously, they couldn't tell a good sermon from a bad one.

    16:11-16:15

And you know, you know the great thing about the internet?

    16:16-16:21

The great thing about the internet is we have access to so many sermons.

    16:24-16:26

But you know a bad thing about the internet?

    16:32-16:33

Some of you got ahead of me.

    16:35-16:39

We have access to so many sermons.

    16:42-16:47

Now listen, I'm not telling you not to be listening to sermons.

    16:47-16:49

    I think you absolutely should.

    16:49-16:49

    I do.

    16:51-16:54

I listen to sermons online from other preachers.

    16:55-17:00

Here's what I am saying, you've gotta use discernment, people, and you've gotta watch for red flags.

    17:02-17:10

And there are so many red flags, and Micah gives us a few, all right?

    17:11-17:14

Micah gives us a few, so let's highlight those.

    17:14-17:16

On your outline, four clues you're hearing a bad sermon.

    17:20-17:22

Four clues you're hearing a bad sermon.

    17:25-17:31

Keep these things in mind anytime you're listening to a sermon, even here, okay?

    17:32-17:32

    Even here.

    17:35-17:37

Number one, the sermon avoids hard truths.

    17:39-17:40

    The sermon avoids hard truths.

    17:40-17:42

    Go back to verse six.

    17:42-17:43

    See this?

    17:44-17:45

Do not preach lest they preach.

    17:45-17:47

One should not preach of such things.

    17:47-17:49

See, Micah was talking about the judgment of God.

    17:50-17:59

They're like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, nope, "we shouldn't be talking about these things." Many people evaluate a sermon based on how it makes them feel.

    18:01-18:05

If the sermon makes me feel good, then it was a good sermon.

    18:06-18:10

And if a sermon made me feel bad, then it was a bad sermon.

    18:12-18:12

    (buzzer buzzing)

    18:13-18:13

    Incorrect.

    18:14-18:16

That is not how you evaluate a sermon.

    18:18-18:20

People just wanna hear the good stuff, right?

    18:20-18:21

Oh, just tell us the positive.

    18:22-18:23

We don't wanna hear the negative stuff.

    18:24-18:30

I don't wanna hear, just, can you, can you just preach like comfort to us?

    18:31-18:39

Not so much of like the commandments and what God expects from me and disciples stuff.

    18:39-18:42

    Can you just affirm me?

    18:43-18:44

    Give me the good stuff.

    18:45-18:46

    That's what they were saying.

    18:48-18:52

Nothing about guilt, nothing about, hey, you're in sin and you need to repent.

    18:54-18:59

Nothing about, God's wrath is on people who do not obey the gospel.

    19:02-19:03

They say, you shouldn't preach about things.

    19:05-19:08

But Pastor Jeff, you're making people feel bad about themselves.

    19:12-19:18

You know, it's funny, over the years of ministry, I've preached about hell many times.

    19:20-19:23

You know, so many times that I've preached about hell, I've gotten pushback.

    19:25-19:25

    You shouldn't talk like that.

    19:25-19:26

    You shouldn't say those things.

    19:27-19:28

Pastor Jeff, you shouldn't talk like that.

    19:28-19:33

You know, that scares people and doesn't make people feel good.

    19:33-19:38

And I've gotten so much pushback when I preached on hell.

    19:38-19:44

But you know, it occurred to me this week as I was thinking through these things, I've preached on heaven a lot too.

    19:45-19:47

And you know I've never gotten any pushback on that.

    19:49-19:51

    They're like, "Oh, that's a truth that's delicious.

    19:52-19:58

"Tell us more about that." But hell, that's a truth, now we're not really interested in that one as much.

    19:58-19:59

    Do you see a problem?

    19:59-20:03

When we start picking and choosing what it is that we want to hear from God?

    20:03-20:04

    That's a problem.

    20:08-20:18

If hell isn't real, if sin isn't a problem, if guilt isn't a valid feeling for sinners who are disobeying God, then what is the purpose of the cross?

    20:21-20:29

What moves us people to cry out to God for mercy and forgiveness from our eternally terminal condition?

    20:30-20:39

If we don't address the reality that we're broken people and Jesus Christ came into this world to rescue us from our sin.

    20:43-20:47

How are we gonna do that if we're avoiding the hard truths?

    20:50-20:53

You know, just imagine with me, imagine if I went to the doctor.

    20:53-21:45

Imagine I go to the doctor and I'm sitting down in a room and the doctor goes, "You know, Jeff, "your blood pressure is pretty high." And I say to him, "Too scary, what else you got?" And the doctor says, "Well, Jeff, you're a bit overweight." And I say, "I don't really want you making me feel bad about eating cake." "Next." And the doctor says, "Well, you know what, Jeff, as you're approaching 50, you know what What we recommend is that men about your age get a colonoscopy, and I say, that doesn't sound like fun.

    21:49-21:57

The doctor says, Jeff, hey, we got your blood work back and it's giving me a lot of concern.

    21:59-22:03

And I'm like, dude, you are really bumming me out.

    22:05-22:07

Can we just talk about what is working?

    22:07-22:10

    My left elbow feels amazing.

    22:11-22:12

    Not a bit of pain.

    22:12-22:13

Look at that, full range of motion.

    22:13-22:14

    Are you seeing this?

    22:15-22:16

Can we just talk about this?

    22:17-22:19

Let's just talk about how great my left elbow is.

    22:19-22:20

    Can we do that?

    22:21-22:23

Truth be told, it's about the only thing that still works.

    22:26-22:31

But wouldn't that be foolish of me to so address the doctor?

    22:31-22:33

That's exactly what Mike is talking about.

    22:33-22:37

'Cause that's the mentality that people have.

    22:37-22:39

We just wanna hear about the good stuff.

    22:39-22:41

Don't tell us any of the bad stuff.

    22:41-22:42

    Don't give us any warning.

    22:44-22:49

That's why at Harvest, we preach through a book of the Bible, verse by verse, chapter by chapter.

    22:49-22:50

    Why?

    22:50-22:51

    Well, lots of reasons.

    22:51-22:52

Here's a reason, we don't wanna avoid anything.

    22:53-22:55

    We don't wanna avoid anything.

    22:58-23:00

Because you know, Jesus went right after the hard truths, didn't he?

    23:01-23:16

Jesus said things like, "Deny yourself." Jesus said things like, "You need to carry your cross." Jesus said things like, "Oh, you wanna be great?

    23:17-23:23

"Well, then you need to be a slave to everybody." And how did people react to Jesus?

    23:25-23:40

Jesus often had people walk away from him, saying, "This is a hard saying, who can accept it?" Listen, my friends, whoever avoids hard truths isn't following the pattern of Jesus.

    23:42-23:49

They aren't preaching the whole counsel of God, and they aren't being faithful to their ministry.

    23:51-24:02

So when you hear a sermon that avoids hard truth about sin, about guilt, about repentance, about God's wrath, about costly discipleship.

    24:02-24:06

If you hear a sermon like that, well, you're hearing a bad sermon, okay?

    24:07-24:09

    Here's another clue, number two.

    24:09-24:10

Four clues you're hearing a bad sermon.

    24:10-24:12

The sermon avoids hard truths, number two.

    24:12-24:14

The sermon doesn't agree with something God already said.

    24:15-24:16

    How about that?

    24:17-24:19

No brainer, look at verse six again.

    24:22-24:24

He says again, "One should not preach of such things.

    24:24-24:29

"Look, disgrace will not overtake us." Boy, that's a definitive statement, isn't it?

    24:29-24:31

    Disgrace will not overtake us.

    24:31-24:32

    It will not.

    24:32-24:32

    Wait, wait, wait.

    24:33-24:40

You're saying, are you saying, Micah, that God is going to bring discipline on people who disobey him?

    24:40-24:41

    That's poppycock.

    24:42-24:42

    No way!

    24:46-24:48

And you know, I thought so much about that this week.

    24:48-24:58

You realize Micah was not the first preacher to warn of God's judgment on unbelievers, to warn of God's judgment coming upon the idolaters.

    24:58-24:59

Do you know that's all through the Old Testament?

    25:02-25:16

    For example, Leviticus 26, 17, Deuteronomy 28, 15, Deuteronomy 30, 18, Deuteronomy 31, 17, 1 Kings 14, 16, Jeremiah 7, 15, Jeremiah 15, 1, Hosea 9, 17.

    25:17-25:17

Do I need to go on?

    25:18-25:18

    Do you get the point?

    25:19-25:23

This was a consistent message of God all through his prophets.

    25:23-25:26

And then Micah says it and they're like, nah, that's not gonna happen.

    25:28-25:28

    Excuse me?

    25:31-25:39

The preachers in Micah's day, these false teachers, they just, they were flat out contradicting what God already said.

    25:41-25:43

Either that reminds you of Satan.

    25:44-25:45

    Remember Garden of Eden?

    25:46-25:51

Tempting Eve to eat off the tree and Eve's like, Well, God says we're not supposed to eat that or touch it or we're gonna die.

    25:52-25:53

    You remember Satan's response?

    25:53-25:54

    You're not gonna die.

    25:54-25:56

That's exactly what he's talking about here.

    25:57-25:58

    No, you're not gonna die.

    25:59-25:59

    No.

    26:02-26:04

    Satan's tactics never change.

    26:04-26:07

All he does is recruit more spokesmen.

    26:10-26:12

And the only remedy for this is to know your Bible.

    26:13-26:20

You gotta read it and you gotta reread it and you gotta memorize Scripture Are you gonna meditate on the word of God?

    26:20-26:31

And you have to be so familiar with God's truth that as soon as someone spews a lie, it is so obvious to you, like, "Man, that's not what God says.

    26:33-26:39

"Caught that right away." It's gotta be so obvious to you.

    26:41-26:49

You know, like when somebody gets up and says, "Okay, my friends, listen, "You know, God does not give you any more "than you can handle." Well, that's a popular sermon, isn't it?

    26:49-26:50

    You ever hear that one?

    26:51-26:51

    (slurps)

    26:51-26:53

Sorry, I gag a little bit when I hear that.

    26:54-26:54

    (congregation laughs)

    26:54-26:58

Threw up a little bit in my mouth when I hear people say that, because that is not in the Bible.

    26:58-27:00

I've had people fight me on that.

    27:00-27:01

    That is in the Bible!

    27:01-27:03

I'm like, that is not in the Bible!

    27:03-27:04

    It's not in the Bible.

    27:05-27:08

Show me where that's in the Bible, that God does not give you more than you can handle.

    27:10-27:17

I can show you where the Bible says God gives us way more than we can handle learn to depend on him and not ourselves.

    27:19-27:27

So this idea that God doesn't give you more trials than you can handle, the Bible says God's not going to allow you to be tempted beyond what you can bear.

    27:27-27:29

That's a different thing, but that's not what people are preaching.

    27:31-27:34

You gotta know what the Bible says.

    27:34-27:35

    Here's another one.

    27:35-27:40

People say, well, you know, God's done with Israel, and the church has replaced Israel.

    27:41-27:42

    That's not true.

    27:43-27:44

    Read Romans 9, 10, and 11.

    27:46-27:48

God has not replaced Israel with anything.

    27:49-27:58

God made a covenant with Israel, and God's going to fulfill that covenant, but there's people that preach that, and it's wrong, and you've gotta know your Bibles.

    28:00-28:01

    Here's another one.

    28:02-28:06

You know, women are just as qualified to be pastors of churches as men.

    28:09-28:17

Look, I know somebody right now is like, "Oh, that's a sexist statement." My most favorite human being on the planet is a woman.

    28:20-28:21

    By far.

    28:23-28:28

Look, it's not speaking about ability or talent.

    28:32-28:36

The Bible says there's roles that God has for men and roles God has for women.

    28:37-28:39

And you can take that up with him, but that's what he said.

    28:42-28:49

By the way, don't assume that a sermon is biblical just because a Bible verse is read.

    28:51-28:52

    That happens a lot.

    28:53-29:02

People get up and they read a verse and then they start spewing trash and you're like, "Well, he read a verse, so this must be biblical." No, no, no, that's not the evaluation.

    29:02-29:08

You need to ask yourself, "Is the preacher expositing?" Meaning this, "The preacher, is he representing the text?

    29:10-29:15

Is he echoing what's in there, not using it as a springboard to launch into his own thing?

    29:17-29:21

Is what he's saying agreeing with everything else that God said in his word?

    29:21-29:24

And if the answer is no, then you're hearing a bad sermon.

    29:27-29:29

Four clues you're hearing a bad sermon.

    29:29-29:33

The sermon doesn't, I'm sorry, the sermon avoids hard truths.

    29:33-29:36

The sermon doesn't agree with something God already said, number three.

    29:37-29:39

    Here's another huge clue.

    29:39-29:40

The sermon appeals to the flesh.

    29:43-29:44

The sermon appeals to the flesh.

    29:44-29:45

    Look at verse 11 again.

    29:45-29:58

If a man should go about and utter wind and lies, old windbag, saying, I will preach to you of wine and strong drink.

    30:03-30:04

I will preach to you of wine and strong drink.

    30:04-30:07

Some people are like, oh, I hope this is a sermon series.

    30:08-30:09

    I wanna hear about this.

    30:10-30:11

It's an appeal to the flesh.

    30:13-30:23

There's a huge clue, listen, huge clue that it's a bad sermon when the spotlight of the sermon isn't on Jesus Christ, but the spotlight's on you.

    30:26-30:30

See, here's the message of the gospel, the short version.

    30:32-30:35

The message of the gospel is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    30:36-30:41

He died to take away our sin, and He rose from the dead to give us eternal life.

    30:42-30:53

And upon believing in Him, His Spirit indwells all believers, and His people are to grow as disciples by the power of His Holy Spirit, by the wisdom that comes from His word.

    30:55-30:56

    That's the gospel.

    30:57-31:02

But that has been replaced in our day by sermons that are all about my benefit.

    31:03-31:07

Sermons that cater to, God wants me to be happy.

    31:10-31:11

God wants me to be happy.

    31:12-31:13

    Like, what do you mean?

    31:13-31:16

I'm gonna give you a couple examples of these kinds of things.

    31:17-31:22

One is, we can call it the psychologized message of self-actualization.

    31:24-31:25

    Oh, that sounds so technical.

    31:26-31:29

    The psychologized message of self-actualization.

    31:29-31:29

    What does that mean?

    31:32-31:37

I mean, so much preaching in our day is that Jesus is our divine psychologist who wants us to learn how to love ourselves.

    31:38-31:47

Jesus' main concern for me is that I have positive feelings, that I stop thinking less of myself and I start thinking more of myself.

    31:52-31:59

And in this message, I need to see myself as a victim of psychological disorders rather than an offender of God's law.

    31:59-32:08

What I need is healing and purpose in my life rather than mercy and forgiveness.

    32:10-32:11

    Do you see the problem?

    32:12-32:21

    You see it, it's self-centered, it's self-loving, it's self-pitying, and it's producing a non-serving generation of churchgoers.

    32:25-32:34

Because instead of denying yourself, instead of spending myself for the sake of the gospel and his kingdom to make disciples.

    32:34-32:37

We've turned that all into self-fulfillment.

    32:41-32:43

Another example is the prosperity gospel.

    32:44-32:47

If you have enough faith, God's gonna make you healthy and wealthy.

    32:48-32:56

And there's whole ministries built on persuading people, sow your financial seed and reap a financial harvest.

    33:02-33:06

Do I believe that the more you give to God, the more God gives back to you?

    33:06-33:08

    100%, I believe that.

    33:10-33:14

But see, people have turned that into the whole thing.

    33:17-33:21

And sermons have turned into motivational pep talks, not calls to discipleship.

    33:22-33:25

And you listen to those sermons, actually very little is said about Jesus Christ.

    33:26-33:33

Very little is said about the cross, but much is said about how God wants you to be rich.

    33:33-33:34

    It's a problem.

    33:38-33:40

Other examples, the word of faith movement.

    33:41-33:47

You have the power to speak things into existence, name it and claim it, believe it, speak it, receive it.

    33:50-34:00

I could go on, but I think you see my point that like in Micah's day, so much in the church today is all about me.

    34:00-34:08

It appeals to the flesh, and it turns the gospel of Jesus Christ into self-serving lies.

    34:12-34:20

And by the way, the Bible totally predicted this was going to happen in our day, just as it happened in Micah's day.

    34:21-34:23

Like look at 2 Timothy 4, verses three through four.

    34:25-34:26

    Look at this.

    34:28-34:44

For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to, oh, there it is, suit their own passions.

    34:44-34:52

Not teachers to tell me about Jesus, not teachers to explain the gospel, not teachers to tell me how to be a disciple, suit my passions.

    34:53-34:57

We'll turn away from listening to the truth, wander off into myths.

    34:58-35:01

You see, Paul says the time is coming and I would say it's now here.

    35:04-35:10

When a sermon focuses on you, when it appeals to your flesh, that's a clue that you're listening to a bad sermon.

    35:12-35:13

    And finally, one more.

    35:15-35:17

    The sermon attracts non-spiritual people.

    35:20-35:21

Look at the end of verse 11.

    35:22-35:26

Again, he says, you know, the person says, I will preach to you of wine and strong drink.

    35:27-35:30

Look at this last statement, he goes, he would be the preacher for this people.

    35:30-35:39

Wow, that's an indictment on the spiritual condition of Israel, and it's not good, not good.

    35:40-35:41

That wasn't a compliment from Micah.

    35:44-35:49

And I have to tell you, church, don't assume because the church is big that the truth is being proclaimed.

    35:51-35:59

Somehow we get in our minds that the size of the church shows you how faithful the church is being to the Lord, and that's not always the case.

    36:00-36:07

You know, Islam has like 1.8 billion followers, and they're not exactly representing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    36:08-36:10

When I say not exactly, I mean not at all.

    36:14-36:22

But when you avoid hard biblical truths, but instead you seek to appeal to the flesh, you're gonna get a large following.

    36:25-36:27

But not of people that know their Bibles.

    36:29-36:43

You're going to want, you're going to get, excuse me, you're gonna get people that just want some personal benefit, even if that personal benefit is, you know what, I feel really good about myself because I went to church today.

    36:46-36:50

A sermon that doesn't have the gospel attracts people that don't want to hear the gospel.

    36:52-36:53

    And that's a clue.

    36:54-36:55

    It's a bad sermon.

    36:58-36:59

    Micah chapter 2.

    37:02-37:05

Church, I would say again, no, no.

    37:07-37:13

The message of Micah is the message for 2024 America.

    37:17-37:19

We're facing God's judgment right now.

    37:21-37:27

And when someone stands up and says they're speaking for God, you better know how to discern.

    37:29-37:29

    Let's pray.

    37:31-37:38

Father in heaven, it's just astounding to me how relevant your word is.

    37:39-37:41

I mean, your word tells us it's living and active.

    37:43-37:58

But when I get to a passage like this and look at the state of the Christian church in America, it's staggering how directly this applies.

    38:01-38:09

Father, I could bemoan what's happening in other churches, but really you've called me to focus on what's happening in this one.

    38:10-38:14

And I pray for my brothers and sisters here that we would grow in discernment.

    38:14-38:16

Your word tells us it's something that we learn.

    38:17-38:19

It's something that we have to grow in.

    38:19-38:22

And I pray, Father, that we would grow in this discipline.

    38:22-38:34

We would grow in the ability to immediately be able to recognize garbage when it's being spewed, but it's being called the word of God.

    38:37-38:54

Father, we thank you that you've given us a book, something that can be analyzed and read and re-read and compared and meditated on, and you've given us this book so that these truths are frozen.

    38:58-39:04

Father, for Harvest Bible Chapel, help us to grow as discerners of your Word.

    39:05-39:07

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  • 00:46-00:50

Open your Bibles with me please to 1 Thessalonians chapter 5.

    00:53-01:11

While you're turning there, many years ago at my former church, there was a season where there was a lady and her husband, they lived right down the road from the church, and they were calling often, asking if I could help them move.

    01:13-01:14

I didn't know who they were.

    01:15-01:18

And I'm like, you know what, I got a lot going on.

    01:19-01:24

And I got a degenerated spine, but she kept calling.

    01:26-01:33

And then finally I came to this place, I'm like, you know what, maybe, maybe this is an evangelism opportunity.

    01:34-01:44

You know, maybe this is somebody that the Lord is bringing to me to minister his love and I've just been pushing this couple off.

    01:45-01:46

So I said, all right, you know what?

    01:47-01:49

I didn't really have the time.

    01:49-01:53

I'm like, OK, you know, I got a couple hours this afternoon that I'm just going to go help you.

    01:53-01:58

And I went down and went into their apartment.

    01:58-02:03

And they had a whole giant stack of boxes.

    02:05-02:11

And I would say, conservatively, about 80% of them were labeled underwear.

    02:15-02:20

And I know you probably have the same question that I have, but I didn't ask.

    02:23-02:27

Well, the good thing was they lived on the second floor apartment.

    02:27-02:29

There was no elevator, so it was all steps.

    02:31-02:37

And I loaded up my little-- I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the time, stuffed it as full as I could.

    02:37-02:42

And even better was the apartment they moved into was up three flights of steps.

    02:45-02:45

But I'm like, you know what?

    02:45-02:47

Maybe this is an opportunity, right?

    02:47-02:47

    Maybe it's not.

    02:48-02:50

So after a couple hours of this, I...

    02:52-02:54

And by the way, her husband sat there and watched me work the whole time.

    02:54-02:55

    That's another story.

    02:55-02:59

But like, grab a box of underwear and help there, guy.

    03:00-03:08

But like, but finally I said to the lady, I said, so do you have a church home?

    03:08-03:10

And she goes, oh yeah, we go to church in Worthington.

    03:12-03:23

I said, "Oh, why isn't anybody from your church helping you move?" She goes, "Pfft." She goes, "I could never ask my pastor to help.

    03:23-03:28

He's too busy." She goes, "And besides, he has a bad back."

    03:29-03:30

    (congregation laughing)

    03:31-03:32

    Wah, wah.

    03:37-03:39

You know we're called to help people, right?

    03:40-03:46

But sometimes, sometimes people can be very hard to help.

    03:48-03:53

And sometimes we don't know the best way to help people.

    03:54-03:58

Well, fortunately we have God's word to teach us.

    03:58-04:02

So let's bow our heads, lock in Keaton.

    04:02-04:09

I'm gonna ask you to pray for me and I'm gonna pray for you as we get into God's word together.

    04:10-04:10

    Did I say that right?

    04:12-04:13

    Okay, thank you.

    04:13-04:13

    All right.

    04:14-04:16

    I'm learning new terminology, so.

    04:20-04:21

I'm still working on that one.

    04:22-04:22

    Let's pray.

    04:25-04:28

Father in heaven, the command is clear in your word, we are to love one another.

    04:29-04:33

And sometimes that is hard to figure out exactly how to do that.

    04:35-04:38

    But it's absolutely necessary.

    04:39-04:43

Your son told us that the world will know that we belong to him by the way that we love one another.

    04:49-05:06

When Jesus was asked what the greatest commandment was, he told us, "It's to love you, Father." But Jesus also said, "The second greatest is like it. We are to love one another." We're to do unto others the way we would have them do unto us.

    05:07-05:21

And Father, I just pray that you would grow us in our affection for you, which will result in true love for one another.

    05:22-05:27

Father, let your word minister to us now, we ask in Jesus' name, amen.

    05:29-05:31

So this month we've been talking about discernment.

    05:31-05:34

And on the first week, we talked about discerning the truth.

    05:35-05:40

You have to test everything that you hear according to the word of God.

    05:40-05:41

You have to filter it through the word.

    05:42-05:44

And then we talked about discerning God's will.

    05:45-05:49

Does God have a path for your life that you've got to make sure you stay on?

    05:49-05:50

No, it doesn't work that way.

    05:51-05:54

You need to present yourself as a living sacrifice.

    05:54-05:58

You need to not be conformed to the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

    05:58-06:04

And you do that, you will know what God's will is.

    06:05-06:12

And last week we talked about making the best choices, discerning the best choices, even in gray areas.

    06:14-06:24

Now, all of these things, the truth and God's will and choosing what's best, all of those things are really about you and you alone.

    06:27-06:32

Your walk, your knowing the truth, your choices.

    06:32-06:34

That's kind of a just you thing, right?

    06:37-06:37

    But you're not alone.

    06:39-06:46

And discernment is something that you need in your relationships with others in the church.

    06:50-06:55

This isn't just for pastors or elders or small group leaders.

    06:55-06:58

This is, you're going to see, this is for everybody.

    07:00-07:04

How can I effectively minister to people with problems?

    07:05-07:06

    You gotta use discernment.

    07:08-07:09

    You gotta use discernment.

    07:09-07:13

Look at 1 Thessalonians chapter five.

    07:13-07:14

Look at verses 12 and 13.

    07:14-07:28

He says, "We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work.

    07:30-07:32

    Be at peace among yourselves.

    07:36-07:38

Those verses aren't really part of the sermon today.

    07:40-07:41

    I just like them.

    07:43-07:44

    Look at verse 14.

    07:47-07:55

He says, "And we urge you, brothers." Now, there's a little shift there, right?

    07:55-08:02

Verse 12, he says, "We ask you," And verse 14, "We urge you," this is a little stronger here.

    08:03-08:04

    This is a little stronger.

    08:05-08:22

He says, "We urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak." And here Paul is telling the Thessalonian church, hey, you gotta take care of each other.

    08:23-08:25

You've got to take care of each other.

    08:28-08:31

But you have to do it appropriately.

    08:32-08:34

So on your outline, I want you to jot some things down.

    08:35-08:36

    Discerning needs in the church.

    08:39-08:40

    How can I help you?

    08:40-08:48

Well, we were introduced to three categories of people in these verse, in verse 14 rather.

    08:49-08:52

So number one, let's talk about the idol.

    08:52-08:55

Number one, the idol need admonished.

    08:55-08:56

we're gonna talk about the idol first.

    08:57-09:00

    The idol need admonished.

    09:01-09:03

Let's look at verse 14 again.

    09:05-09:06

    Very simple today.

    09:08-09:18

But he says, and we urge you brothers, admonish the idol.

    09:21-09:23

    What's the idol?

    09:23-09:24

    What is the...

    09:24-09:26

Actually, that was a military term.

    09:27-09:31

And it was used about a soldier who wasn't keeping rank.

    09:31-09:39

In fact, the Greeks used this word to describe men who refused to serve their country.

    09:41-09:43

Like, well, what does that mean for the church?

    09:45-09:48

Well, in church, we call them pew sitters.

    09:49-09:50

You guys know what a pew is?

    09:50-09:51

I might be showing my age here.

    09:52-09:53

You know what a pew is?

    09:53-09:54

    (congregation laughing)

    09:56-09:57

    Pew sitters.

    09:59-10:03

In the church, he's talking about, another word we could use is lazy.

    10:04-10:06

I'm not very good at sugarcoating things.

    10:06-10:13

He's talking about people that are attending, but they're not involved.

    10:16-10:19

They just warm a seat every Sunday.

    10:21-10:24

And then we'll see you next Sunday.

    10:26-10:32

They don't serve anywhere in the church, or if they do, it's just minimal effort.

    10:34-10:36

    And they don't give, right?

    10:36-10:44

And occasionally they might, you know, drop $5 in the collection, like I'm gonna give God a tip here, right?

    10:44-10:46

Like service was good today, God.

    10:47-10:48

I'm gonna give you a tip.

    10:50-10:52

And they certainly don't go to small group, right?

    10:52-10:54

    I don't need small group.

    10:58-11:00

Here's the thing about pew sitters.

    11:01-11:04

They think that their spiritual gift is criticism.

    11:05-11:06

And that's not on the list.

    11:08-11:09

Do you know what pew sitters are like?

    11:12-11:19

Pew sitters are like those two old Muppets that sat in the balcony.

    11:21-11:21

    (congregation laughing)

    11:21-11:24

Now, I gotta be honest with you, total transparency here.

    11:25-11:34

When I was a kid, I always wanted to watch the Muppets, but I absolutely couldn't because I was terrified of those two.

    11:35-11:37

I was, this is absolutely true.

    11:37-11:38

    I was terrified.

    11:39-11:42

Statler and Waldorf, I was scared to death.

    11:42-11:45

And if my family was watching the Muppets, I wouldn't even go in the room.

    11:46-11:49

I was scared of them, they were so evil to me.

    11:50-11:52

    I mean, think about it.

    11:52-11:55

They were always off by themselves, right?

    11:56-11:57

    Away from everybody else.

    11:57-11:59

They were never involved with the rest of them.

    11:59-12:01

They were detached and by themselves.

    12:02-12:05

And all they did was laugh at everyone and make fun of them.

    12:05-12:10

"Oh, oh, look at that, frog and a pig, oh." And it was just like, that is so creepy.

    12:12-12:16

And I was thinking about them this week because that's what Paul's talking about here.

    12:17-12:18

    That's the idol.

    12:18-12:20

    They don't get involved.

    12:21-12:24

They just sit back and criticize everything else.

    12:29-12:35

You see the idol have a problem and it's a problem of the will.

    12:36-12:40

Write that down because that's gonna be so important here.

    12:41-12:42

It's a problem of the will.

    12:45-12:54

These are people that choose to be consumers, not investors in the church.

    12:58-13:06

So what do we do? What do we do with our Statlers and Waldorf's here? What do we do with them?

    13:07-13:08

Well, what does he say to do?

    13:10-13:11

What does he say to do?

    13:11-13:12

    Say it.

    13:13-13:13

    Admonish.

    13:14-13:15

Like, well, what does that mean?

    13:16-13:27

Well, the Greek literally means to put some sense into it or instruct about inevitable consequences.

    13:28-13:30

It just, it means warn them is what it means.

    13:30-13:32

Just warn them like, hey, hey.

    13:33-13:37

Another word we would use for that is to give them the Dutch uncle talk.

    13:40-13:42

Like, hey, you gotta get on board here.

    13:43-13:45

I noticed you've been coming to church here for a while.

    13:45-13:46

    Where are you serving?

    13:46-13:46

    I'm not really serving.

    13:47-13:47

    Well, why not?

    13:49-13:50

Are you in a small group?

    13:50-13:51

No, I don't go to a small group.

    13:51-13:51

    Why don't you?

    13:53-13:54

Because the church is about relationships.

    13:54-13:55

    You need to get involved.

    13:55-13:56

You need to get plugged in.

    13:56-13:58

You need to serve in some way.

    13:59-14:02

This church is about making disciples, right?

    14:03-14:04

    We're not entertaining.

    14:05-14:12

We're about making disciples, and we believe that a disciple of Jesus Christ worships Christ, walks with Christ, and works for Christ.

    14:12-14:13

    Are you doing that?

    14:15-14:17

Well, I'm not really doing it.

    14:17-14:18

Well, you need to start doing it.

    14:20-14:21

    You need to get involved.

    14:24-14:34

You know, with this building project, you know, 11 acres or what, up in New Sewickley, You gotta get involved in serving, in giving.

    14:39-14:49

That's a problem in our culture, and it has been for a while, but we live in a culture where it's just, it's a consumer mentality, right?

    14:49-15:10

And you look at churches, like you look at, you know, Target versus Walmart versus, you know, Costco, what, it's this consumer mentality that I choose a church based on who has the nicest playground equipment or who serves the best coffee or which service is the shortest, who has the best fog machines.

    15:10-15:17

And it's just consumer mentality, but it all boils down to what do I like and what do I prefer?

    15:17-15:23

And we get this mindset that church is this place where I go to receive and it's not.

    15:24-15:26

Church is a place where you go to give.

    15:26-15:29

We are all here to give something.

    15:30-15:31

    (congregation laughing)

    15:32-15:34

    See, God gave you gifts.

    15:35-15:39

And if you're like, man, man, I feel like I'm a puss it or is he talking about me?

    15:39-15:41

    I wanna just encourage you.

    15:42-15:45

Listen, God gave you a gift to use to serve him.

    15:47-15:49

    God gave you money.

    15:49-15:51

Are you giving back to him?

    15:53-15:57

And that's why Paul says, those who are just sitting there, he goes, admonish them.

    15:58-15:59

    Admonish them.

    16:02-16:08

And that's, this is tough because we by nature prefer to avoid these kinds of conversations, right?

    16:09-16:11

    We prefer to avoid them.

    16:11-16:14

Well, what if, like what if they get mad at me?

    16:15-16:17

Well, just think about that for a second.

    16:18-16:26

What if they get mad at you because you're encouraging them to be serious about their walk with Christ, in the body of Christ?

    16:28-16:29

    Is that unreasonable?

    16:31-16:34

Like, well, what if they just get mad and go to another church?

    16:34-16:36

And I would say, well, I hope they don't.

    16:39-16:46

I really hope that they step up here because reality is if they just go to another church, they're just gonna be lazy there too.

    16:48-16:51

We're trying to encourage people, look, be a disciple of Christ.

    16:52-16:53

    Step up.

    16:55-16:56

    Be intentional.

    16:58-17:00

    Admonish the idol.

    17:02-17:11

When we were kids, and you can understand, my mother was just, she was just a music nut.

    17:11-17:15

She played the piano and she insisted that all of her kids were musicians.

    17:16-17:23

And I had to tell you that so you understand the gravity of this little illustration.

    17:23-17:31

but my younger brother was in the band, as we all were, played the same trumpet that got passed down from sibling to sibling.

    17:31-17:32

Anybody else have the hand-me-down instruments?

    17:35-17:37

By the time he had it, it looked like it's been through some wars.

    17:38-17:43

But so he was in the band, and he was just in elementary school.

    17:43-17:45

He was just, I don't know, fourth grade or whatever.

    17:45-17:45

He was just a little squirt.

    17:46-17:53

But one day my mother noticed that he wasn't carrying his trumpet to and from school.

    17:53-18:06

And she goes, "Why aren't you taking your trumpet?" And he said as nonchalantly as anything, he goes, "Oh, I quit the band." And again, if you knew my mother, she went through the roof.

    18:07-18:08

She's like, "You quit the band?

    18:08-18:11

"Well, why'd you quit the band?" Not acceptable, right?

    18:12-18:16

She goes, "Why did you quit the band?" He goes, "Oh, don't worry.

    18:17-18:27

"They're doing just fine without me." And you know, some people have that attitude about church.

    18:28-18:33

You can come here and you can look at the worship team, they go, they wouldn't need me.

    18:35-18:36

    They're doing just fine.

    18:36-18:38

The worship team does need you.

    18:39-18:42

You've got a musical talent, step up and use it.

    18:42-18:51

Or you can look at, you know, whether it's the preaching or the kids ministry or youth group, like, well, looks like they got all their ducks in a row, they don't need me.

    18:51-18:53

    That is so wrong.

    18:53-18:54

    We do need you.

    18:59-19:12

And I got to think, you know, this whole attitude of getting back to my little brother here, this whole attitude of all the band's doing just fine without me.

    19:12-19:14

What if everybody in the band had that attitude?

    19:16-19:16

    Right?

    19:17-19:19

What if everybody in the band was like, well, I'm not important.

    19:21-19:23

But what if that happened in the church?

    19:24-19:26

What if everybody in the church was like, well, they don't need me.

    19:30-19:35

Being part of a family means that you're responsible for contributing to the family.

    19:39-19:41

You are responsible for what happens here.

    19:43-19:46

And Paul says the idol need admonished, right?

    19:47-19:49

Number two, the fainthearted need encouraged.

    19:51-19:54

    The fainthearted need encouraged.

    19:56-20:00

Now this word fainthearted is an interesting word.

    20:00-20:06

Literally it means little sold, S-O-U-L-E-D, little sold.

    20:07-20:09

    It's somebody that's worried.

    20:11-20:14

They're down, they have no joy in their walk.

    20:16-20:18

Or we would just say that it's somebody that's discouraged.

    20:20-20:26

They know the promises of God and they desperately wanna believe the promises of God.

    20:28-20:31

But life circumstances just have them so overwhelmed.

    20:34-20:35

    Maybe they experienced a loss.

    20:37-20:41

Maybe it's anxiety, maybe it's their finances, maybe it's a health issue.

    20:44-20:46

Whatever got them there, they're depressed.

    20:47-20:51

Like, I just want to throw in a towel.

    20:51-20:55

I am just so done with, I just...

    21:00-21:08

You see, the idol, we said they have a problem of the will, and the fainthearted have a problem of the emotions.

    21:09-21:12

These people are just in a bad place emotionally.

    21:12-21:14

Write that down, problem of the emotions.

    21:16-21:17

So what do we do with them?

    21:17-21:18

Well, look at verse 14 again.

    21:18-21:24

He says, "Encourage the fainthearted." Encourage the fainthearted.

    21:26-21:27

    What does encourage mean?

    21:29-21:31

Literally, it means speak by coming close.

    21:31-21:34

That's what that means, speak by coming close.

    21:36-21:38

And that tells me it's about the relationship.

    21:40-21:45

You need, when somebody's fainthearted, when somebody's emotionally at the end, what do they need?

    21:45-21:49

They need you to come and put an arm around them and say, "Hey, hey, it's okay.

    21:50-21:51

    We're gonna get through this.

    21:52-21:56

It's all right." You're gonna cheer them on.

    21:57-21:59

And I would say this, please hear me.

    22:00-22:03

    Never, ever discount somebody's feelings.

    22:05-22:12

When somebody's like, you know, I'm feeling sad for whatever, Never be like, you shouldn't feel sad.

    22:14-22:15

You can't help how you feel.

    22:16-22:19

Feelings are just, they're just feelings.

    22:20-22:21

    You can't help that.

    22:26-22:28

So how do you encourage them?

    22:30-22:31

    Encourage them how?

    22:32-22:33

    Well, how about a scripture?

    22:34-22:43

Maybe say something like, you know something from God's word that's really encouraged me, and then share something that God has used to lift your spirits when you've been there.

    22:44-22:49

Maybe that, or maybe say, you know what, can we just stop and pray right now about that?

    22:49-22:50

Let's just stop for a second.

    22:51-22:55

Can we just right now give this over to God and stop and pray for them on the spot?

    22:57-23:11

But you know what I think is almost as big as even scripture and prayer when it comes to fulfilling the command to encourage, is just your presence with them.

    23:13-23:16

To say, look, I'm with you, it's okay.

    23:18-23:22

Whatever's happening, I'm gonna be right there with you.

    23:24-23:27

Some people just need to know that they're not alone.

    23:28-23:32

So the faint-hearted, they need encouraged.

    23:34-23:39

And then number three, write this down, the weak need help.

    23:42-23:44

You're like, where did you come up with that, Pastor Jeff?

    23:44-23:50

Well, look at verse 14, he says, "Help the weak." That's, I know, I know.

    23:51-23:52

I spent a lot of time on that one.

    23:54-23:55

    Help the weak.

    23:57-23:59

We're laughing, but look, it's so simple.

    24:01-24:02

    We're like, well, what's weak?

    24:02-24:03

    What does that mean?

    24:03-24:05

Weaker people that are susceptible to sin.

    24:07-24:16

It's talking, the weak here is referring to people that sort of fall into the same sin over and over.

    24:16-24:17

Do you know anybody like that?

    24:17-24:20

Don't point, but you know anybody like that?

    24:20-24:28

It's like, we just dealt with this like Thursday and we're back in the ditch again, upside down with the wheels spinning.

    24:28-24:37

Like again, they just keep falling into the same sin, Same destructive habits, patterns over and over.

    24:38-24:43

Some people, they just get stuck and they just can't break it.

    24:45-24:48

    Maybe it's overspending.

    24:48-24:51

I know I don't have the money for that, but I just can't seem to help it.

    24:53-24:55

    Maybe it's overeating.

    25:00-25:01

    Maybe it's losing your temper.

    25:04-25:07

Maybe it's looking at stuff on the computer that you shouldn't be looking at.

    25:09-25:14

Maybe it's addiction to a chemical of some kind.

    25:15-25:23

Whatever. But for the weak, you know, we said the idol had a problem of the will and the faint-hearted have a problem of the emotions.

    25:23-25:26

For the weak, it's a problem of the spirit. They're in bondage to sin.

    25:28-25:30

    They're in bondage to sin.

    25:32-25:33

    (clears throat)

    25:34-25:35

So what do you do for them?

    25:37-25:37

What do you do for them?

    25:38-25:43

Well, he says very clearly, help the weak.

    25:47-25:49

What does that mean, help them?

    25:49-25:52

It just means pick them up.

    25:52-25:54

That's what that means, pick them up.

    25:58-26:03

    meaning this, give real help.

    26:06-26:10

Real help, not what we typically do in church world.

    26:11-26:12

    I'll pray for you.

    26:13-26:14

We say that to them, right?

    26:14-26:15

    I'll pray for you.

    26:15-26:18

And in the back of my mind, we're thinking, I'll pray for you.

    26:19-26:22

And I hope that you never bring this up to me again, right?

    26:26-26:27

    Yes, pray.

    26:27-26:30

Yes, absolutely pray, pray on the spot, right?

    26:30-26:31

    Let's pray right now.

    26:32-26:34

But they need more than that.

    26:36-26:38

    They need help.

    26:38-26:40

They need a plan to get unstuck.

    26:41-26:42

Like, well, what does that mean?

    26:42-26:44

    That means counseling and accountability.

    26:45-26:46

    That's what that means.

    26:47-27:06

And listen, if you're dealing with somebody like this and you're like, man, I'm not sure the best way to help them, then you need to talk to one of our pastors or elders, or maybe talk to that person and say, "Hey, I'm gonna go with you "to talk to one of the pastors or elders." But you're stuck and you need help.

    27:08-27:15

Not just the, "I hope it'll get better next week," or, "I'll pray for you, let me know in a month how it goes." You need real help.

    27:15-27:19

You need a plan to get unstuck.

    27:19-27:21

    That's what counseling is.

    27:24-27:41

This is what Paul was talking about in Galatians 6, 1, when he says, "Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness." Like, wait, wait, wait, hang on a second.

    27:44-27:49

What's the difference between the weak and the idle?

    27:49-27:51

I mean, they're both in sin, right?

    27:52-27:55

So what's the difference between these two?

    27:55-27:57

And the answer is the will.

    27:57-27:58

    That's the difference.

    27:59-28:05

You see, these people want to get to a better place.

    28:08-28:20

The difference is the idle are choosing to sin while the weak are struggling with sin and want out.

    28:21-28:23

That's why you have to handle them differently.

    28:25-28:32

And some people need you to give them a real plan of escape.

    28:34-28:34

    The weak need help.

    28:38-28:40

You're like, what was this sermon series about again?

    28:41-28:45

    Number four, you need discernment.

    28:50-28:51

    You need discernment.

    28:53-28:55

Did you ever hear that old expression?

    28:56-28:57

    I'm sure you have.

    28:57-28:58

Did you ever hear that old expression?

    28:58-28:59

If you're only tools, a hammer.

    29:00-29:00

How's the rest of that go?

    29:02-29:03

If you're only tools, a hammer, you what?

    29:04-29:06

You treat every problem like a nail, right?

    29:09-29:13

And that's how a lot of ministry happens in the church.

    29:15-29:17

Is people are like, well, you know what?

    29:17-29:19

    I'm an admonisher, man.

    29:19-29:20

    I just Dutch uncle.

    29:20-29:22

I just tell it to people straight.

    29:22-29:28

And they treat every problem like a nail, and that doesn't work.

    29:31-29:33

There's some people, they're like, you know what?

    29:33-29:46

I'm really good at just helping people, and they just wanna try to help everyone, when some people don't really need counseling, they need a kick.

    29:49-29:55

but you can't see yourself as the hammer because not every problem is a nail.

    29:55-29:58

You can't have a one size fits all approach.

    29:58-30:01

And listen, this is where discernment comes in.

    30:03-30:10

Because here, you notice Paul used some very specific wording here.

    30:11-30:19

And what he's pointing out under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, what we're learning here is you can't treat every problem the same way.

    30:20-30:21

Do you know what I mean?

    30:24-30:26

Because you're gonna run into some problems if you do that.

    30:27-30:33

Like for example, let's just, we'll move this one aside here.

    30:37-30:39

    What if we did that?

    30:40-30:46

What if somebody was lazy and we'll help them?

    30:47-30:49

We're going to give you a plan to help.

    30:49-30:51

    They don't need instructions.

    30:51-30:52

    They know what to do.

    30:53-30:55

They just refuse to do it.

    30:55-30:56

So that ain't going to work.

    30:56-30:57

    What about the faint hearted?

    30:57-31:00

What about the person that's super discouraged?

    31:00-31:04

And we come along and we want to admonish them, knock it off.

    31:04-31:05

    You shouldn't feel that way.

    31:05-31:07

You're making everybody else feel bad.

    31:07-31:09

    We don't like your negativity.

    31:09-31:10

    Knock it off.

    31:11-31:12

    What?

    31:14-31:16

    We're encouraging the weak.

    31:17-31:19

    Somebody's stuck in sin.

    31:19-31:20

    They can't break the habit.

    31:20-31:22

We just put an arm around them.

    31:22-31:33

We're like, "Here, there, everything's gonna be okay." And you walk away and they're like, "Things are not okay because I'm still stuck." You see, that doesn't work, does it?

    31:35-31:37

We could shuffle the deck again, right?

    31:37-31:39

Just move everyone down a floor.

    31:40-31:41

All right, put him up a floor.

    31:43-31:44

    Does that work?

    31:45-31:47

    That doesn't work either.

    31:49-31:51

That doesn't work either, does it?

    31:51-32:01

When somebody's idle, when they're not stepping up and they need to, well, we're just gonna put an arm around them, hey, it's okay, we'll be lazy together.

    32:03-32:05

I'll be the Waldorf to your Statler.

    32:07-32:08

    That doesn't work.

    32:10-32:11

    They need a firmer hand.

    32:12-32:20

Or like somebody's pain hearted, somebody's emotionally struggling, they're against the help.

    32:20-32:22

Hey, you shouldn't feel that way.

    32:23-32:24

    You shouldn't feel sad.

    32:24-32:26

Let me tell you why you shouldn't feel sad.

    32:26-32:29

I'm gonna give you four spiritual principles to not feel sad today.

    32:29-32:32

    Like that's not the problem.

    32:33-32:35

And you're not gonna help them out of their sadness.

    32:39-32:41

But this is one you see a lot in the church.

    32:42-32:43

    admonishing the weak.

    32:45-32:51

I've seen that in this church and please, hear discernment, that's why we're going through this, discernment.

    32:52-33:00

I've seen it where somebody's weak and they're like, "Man, I am really struggling with this." And then we're just like, how in the world could you be struggling with that?

    33:00-33:02

Shame on you, you should know better.

    33:03-33:05

You know what the Bible says, you shouldn't be acting like that.

    33:06-33:13

You know, think of your wife and your kids, and you should, and we just like lay the hammer down on them Like, I'm coming to you for help.

    33:13-33:15

I'm confessing that I need help.

    33:15-33:16

I need you to help me.

    33:16-33:19

And we're just like kicking them into the dirt.

    33:24-33:26

So you see, that doesn't work either, does it?

    33:27-33:31

So maybe, just maybe, this is what I think.

    33:33-33:48

I think maybe the Holy Spirit knew something when he said, "This is specifically how you should minister to people." You're like, "Well, how do I know?

    33:49-33:54

How do I know?" This is where discernment comes in.

    33:54-33:56

This is where you need to ask yourself some questions.

    33:57-34:01

You need to, when somebody has a problem, this is what we do in counseling.

    34:01-34:03

You need to ask yourself, is this a rebellion issue?

    34:05-34:06

Is this some kind of a rebellion issue?

    34:07-34:09

They know what to do and they're, I'm not doing that.

    34:09-34:11

Well, we got a problem of the will.

    34:12-34:13

    Is it an emotional issue?

    34:15-34:17

Their emotions are just kind of ruling them right now.

    34:18-34:20

Okay, then maybe they're in the faint hearted category.

    34:23-34:24

They in bondage of some kind.

    34:24-34:30

Well, if they are, if there's some sin habit they can't break, then they're in the weak category.

    34:33-34:39

And if you don't use discernment, Listen, you're not going to help anyone.

    34:40-34:47

In fact, I would suggest to you, if you're not going to use discernment, you're going to do more harm than good.

    34:51-34:54

So listen, you aren't a hammer.

    34:55-34:56

    Every problem isn't a nail.

    34:58-35:00

    You and I need discernment.

    35:02-35:08

And finally, number five, we all need grace.

    35:12-35:13

    We all need grace.

    35:14-35:25

These last commands are for everybody because I got to deal with your issues and you got to deal with mine.

    35:28-35:31

So look at verse 14 and 15, the rest of it.

    35:32-35:44

He says, "Be patient." Be patient with them all.

    35:47-36:02

Verse 15, "See that no one repays anyone, evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

    36:04-36:05

    We all need grace.

    36:05-36:08

Three things are very quickly right, obvious.

    36:08-36:09

    Be patient.

    36:11-36:12

    Be patient.

    36:12-36:17

Yeah, these three categories are different, right?

    36:18-36:20

But they all got one thing in common, right?

    36:21-36:24

They all got one thing in common, and that's this.

    36:27-36:28

    They all need patience.

    36:31-36:35

They can bother, they can annoy, they can frustrate.

    36:35-36:52

And I just want to encourage you in the Lord, take a deep breath and remember that we all need patience and we all require patience.

    36:54-36:56

    Let her be, be merciful.

    37:00-37:13

Be merciful. Paul reminds us, see that no one repays anyone evil for evil. Right? Sometimes you get hurt in the church. Have you noticed? You don't want it to happen, but it does.

    37:14-37:22

There's slander, there's accusations, there's insults, and the way of the world, the way of the flesh is to retaliate.

    37:23-37:25

You hurt me, I'm gonna hurt you back.

    37:27-37:30

You know, paybacks are not our responsibility.

    37:34-37:36

Do you trust God to handle that?

    37:37-37:40

God said he would handle that, right?

    37:41-37:42

    Do you believe God?

    37:44-37:45

    Well, then you be merciful.

    37:47-37:49

    And lastly, do good.

    37:53-38:01

Look for ways to love people, regardless if they deserve it.

    38:03-38:05

You're like, regardless if they deserve it?

    38:06-38:06

    Yeah.

    38:07-38:08

Do you know what that's called?

    38:09-38:09

    It's called grace.

    38:10-38:11

    Have you heard of that?

    38:13-38:14

Do you know what grace is?

    38:16-38:33

Grace is when a rebellious self-centered sinner has chosen a path to hell over acknowledging his holy God.

    38:35-38:46

And God sends his son to die in the place of that rebel and to raise from the dead, to take away sin and to give the promise of eternal life.

    38:46-38:47

    That's grace.

    38:47-38:52

And we should be people that are familiar with the concept.

    38:53-38:59

And that's why we should be looking to do good to one another.

    39:02-39:11

I don't know, it kind of cracked me up a little bit because I imagine there were people that read this and they were like, it says, seek to do good to one another.

    39:11-39:17

And it's like, well, surely if Paul knew my experience, "No, he doesn't mean so-and-so.

    39:18-39:28

"I love this last race." He goes, "And to everyone." Just in case you're looking for some little loophole, everyone gets grace.

    39:28-39:31

You're the Oprah of grace, okay?

    39:32-39:38

Grace for you and grace for you, and everyone in attendance today at Harvest Bible Chapel gets grace.

    39:43-39:45

our worship team would make their way back up.

    39:47-39:51

Just want to remind you that we're all works in progress.

    39:53-40:08

And we've all, at one point or another in our walks, we've all been here to some degree for some amount of time.

    40:08-40:09

    We've all been there.

    40:12-40:20

And someone has been patient and merciful and good to us.

    40:23-40:24

    We all need grace.

    40:26-40:36

We need discernment, not just in our personal walks, we need discernment in dealing with people.

    40:40-40:43

like, well, man, what if I fail?

    40:45-40:54

Well, I want to encourage you by saying the only way you would really fail is if you just gave up on someone.

    40:57-41:01

People have problems, so let's meet them where they are.

    41:03-41:36

Let's love them in the Lord, and let's discern the right way to get them back on track. Let's pray. Father in heaven, we thank you again for your word, because so often we are so foolish and so just wayward. We insist on and doing things our way.

    41:38-41:46

God, I thank you for this body of believers that you have assembled here and that you are growing here.

    41:47-41:59

And I just ask, Father, for my brothers and sisters that through patience and mercy and grace, we would learn to use discernment to best meet people where they need met.

    42:01-42:03

Father, we can't do this without the wisdom from your word.

    42:03-42:11

We can't do this if your Holy Spirit isn't at work in our hearts with your word.

    42:13-42:21

So again, Father, have us be faithful unto you and faithful to each other.

    42:23-42:25

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

The Lost Art of Discernment. What is Best?

Introduction:

Philippians 1:9-11

1 Corinthians 6-8-10 Principle: Five Questions to Ask To Make the Best Decision in a "Grey Area":

  1. Is it Permissible ? (1 Cor 6:12)

1 Corinthians 6:12 - "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful.
"All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything.

  2. Is it Beneficial ? (1 Cor 6:12)

1 Corinthians 6:12 - "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful.
"All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything.

  3. Could it get me under its Power ? (1 Cor 6:12)

1 Corinthians 6:12 - "All things are lawful for me," but not all things are helpful.
"All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything.

  4. Could it cause a brother to Stumble ? (1 Cor 8:12-13)

1 Corinthians 8:12-13 - Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

  5. Is it Glorifying to God? (1 Cor 10:31)

1 Corinthians 10:31 - So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

  • 00:48-00:56

My baby boy is 18 now, but when he was in preschool, I never thought he would make it this far.

    00:58-01:04

When he was in preschool, he came up every day with reasons why he couldn't go to preschool.

    01:05-01:07

You got somebody like that in your home?

    01:08-01:13

He would say things like, "I can't go to preschool today." Why not?

    01:13-01:14

    It burned down.

    01:15-01:16

    (congregation laughing)

    01:21-01:24

I can't go to preschool today, why not?

    01:25-01:26

    Oh, they canceled it.

    01:26-01:34

Oh, there was a little bit of a problem with these things he came up with.

    01:34-01:36

I was in charge of the preschool.

    01:39-01:43

And I think if it would have burned down, somebody would have told me.

    01:45-01:48

But there was a season, it was a daily struggle, daily.

    01:51-01:59

And one day I was driving him to preschool, we're on 422 heading to Butler, and all of a sudden I hear,

    02:00-02:01

    (imitates car engine revving)

    02:02-02:13

I said, "What was that?" He said, "My pants ripped." I pulled over and turned around.

    02:13-02:17

He had the jeans that had little holes in them.

    02:17-02:23

He took them and (imitates ripping) completely ripped them top to bottom.

    02:25-02:30

So I called Aaron and I'm like, what am I supposed to do?

    02:30-02:33

Because you know what's gonna happen if I bring him home.

    02:34-02:36

He's gonna rip them pants every day.

    02:39-02:40

But I can't take him to preschool.

    02:42-02:43

    (audience laughing)

    02:43-02:45

    Looking like the Incredible Hulk.

    02:47-02:50

I'm like, what can I, what am I supposed to do here?

    02:54-02:58

My wife, brilliant as always, she said, I get an idea.

    02:58-03:06

She said, there's actually a load of clothes that the kids outgrew that I put in the trunk to take to Goodwill.

    03:08-03:09

Get him a pair of pants out of those.

    03:11-03:12

    So that's what I did.

    03:12-03:19

I got in the trunk and I got him a pair of pants that he outgrew and he went to preschool that day, walking around.

    03:21-03:23

He looked like Kramer from Seinfeld.

    03:25-03:28

And do you know he never ripped a pair of pants after that?

    03:31-03:35

But you know, he didn't think it through.

    03:37-03:42

He made, shall we say, not a great choice.

    03:44-03:45

    And he learned.

    03:46-03:50

And right now we're in this series on discernment.

    03:51-03:57

And I hope that we are learning because we're talking about growing in your walk.

    03:58-04:03

We're talking about growing in maturity and your walk with Christ, your sanctification.

    04:03-04:08

And the Bible says, we've already covered that, That means you have to grow in discernment.

    04:08-04:09

    You have to.

    04:12-04:20

A couple of weeks ago, we talked about discerning the truth and we saw, John told us, don't believe everything you hear.

    04:21-04:22

    You've got to test everything.

    04:24-04:27

And last week we talked about discerning God's will.

    04:27-04:31

Does God have a secret path for me to be on?

    04:31-04:33

No, no, no, it doesn't work that way.

    04:33-04:35

The Bible tells us to be a living sacrifice.

    04:35-04:37

Don't be conformed to the ways of the world.

    04:37-04:42

Let the word of God renew our minds so that we're transformed.

    04:43-04:48

And we necessarily will make choices that honor God.

    04:51-04:52

But what does that look like?

    04:54-05:03

How does that process go from just a concept that we sort of introduced last week to actually making that happen?

    05:03-05:08

How can I make choices that best honor God?

    05:09-05:11

That's what we're gonna get into today.

    05:12-05:13

So let's just bow our heads for a moment.

    05:13-05:18

I'm gonna ask that you would please pray for me to communicate God's word clearly.

    05:19-05:24

And I will pray for you to receive God's word eagerly.

    05:24-05:25

    Let's pray.

    05:30-05:36

Father, we've already seen and studied that we need to be transformed by having our minds renewed.

    05:36-05:38

And I pray that's exactly what happens right now.

    05:40-05:43

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

    05:44-05:48

    Philippians chapter 1, verse 9.

    05:49-06:19

Paul says, "And it is my prayer that your love may abound more more with knowledge and all discernment." Stop there. Discernment. What does that word discernment mean? Well, the Greek word here for discernment means sharpness of perception.

    06:22-06:30

You're like, OK, so what am I trying to sharply perceive?

    06:31-06:33

    Well, look at verse 10.

    06:35-06:37

He says, so that you may approve what is excellent.

    06:40-06:41

    There it is.

    06:43-06:45

I want you to have discernment so you may approve what is excellent.

    06:45-07:10

says, "I pray, church, that you are capable of evaluating and determining and choosing the things that are excellent." And I've told you before, and I'm going to tell you again, that is my biggest concern for this church.

    07:11-07:12

That's why we're doing this series.

    07:13-07:15

But my biggest concern for this church is discernment.

    07:19-07:27

And doctrine, first and foremost, of course, that you're not believing everything you hear, but you're testing everything.

    07:27-07:33

But also my concern for this church and discernment is in the choices that you make.

    07:37-07:41

Because discernment is knowing the difference between good and evil.

    07:41-07:42

    We talked about that, right?

    07:42-07:49

Absolutely, you gotta know what's from God and what's not from God.

    07:49-07:58

Absolutely, but when it comes to making choices, you've noticed that not everything is black and white, is it?

    08:01-08:04

Much like my closet, there are lots of shades of gray.

    08:06-08:32

And maturing is growing in not only choosing good over evil, but it's also learning to choose what is best over what is good. Right now somebody's thinking, "Wait, wait, why does it matter?" Well, hang on, hang on a second, Hang on.

    08:35-08:39

Isn't it just okay to choose what is good?

    08:40-08:43

Why do I have to be so concerned with choosing what is best?

    08:45-08:48

Why do I have to shoot for excellence in my choices?

    08:50-08:52

    That's a really good question.

    08:57-09:01

We'll get the next phrase, because there's your answer.

    09:02-09:15

It says, "And so be pure and blameless." Why does it matter that I'm seeking to choose what's best over just what's good?

    09:16-09:18

He says to be pure and blameless.

    09:18-09:21

Do you realize what he's talking about here?

    09:22-09:23

    Pure and blameless.

    09:23-09:26

Let me use a couple of other words to describe the concepts here.

    09:27-09:31

This is about your integrity, and this is about your reputation.

    09:33-09:37

Pure and blameless, your integrity and your reputation.

    09:38-09:43

That's why it should matter because those are two things, your integrity and your reputation.

    09:43-09:46

Those are two things that should matter to you more than anything.

    09:49-09:53

Now this word for pure, this is a really interesting word in the Greek.

    09:53-09:55

Do you know what it literally translates to?

    09:58-10:01

    Sun judged, S-U-N, sun judged.

    10:02-10:03

    That's the word for pure.

    10:03-10:05

    Like, what do you mean?

    10:06-10:11

It's taking something out into the sun to evaluate it.

    10:11-10:15

Because you see, in those days, you would have merchants that would sell these pots, right?

    10:15-10:22

And obviously if you're buying a pot, you wanted one that was intact, right?

    10:25-10:44

But as pots often do, they would break and what the merchants would do is they would take a really fine layer of wax, real tiny layer of wax in the seams of the crack to hold it together so they could sell it that way because you made more money if it was intact.

    10:44-10:49

And if somebody just came, oh, this is intact, not knowing they just bought a broken pot.

    10:51-11:01

So how did you know if the pot was intact if it had the wax seal holding it together, it would have to be sun judged.

    11:02-11:09

You would take it out into the sun and hold it up, and you could see those fine seams.

    11:11-11:16

Because you wanted to make sure that your pot that you were buying was pure.

    11:16-11:18

You would say, yeah, it's pure.

    11:19-11:21

    It's been sun judged.

    11:22-11:23

    That's what that means.

    11:24-11:34

Interestingly, this is where we get the English word "sincere." Do you know what "sincere" literally means?

    11:35-11:36

    It's actually a Latin word.

    11:38-11:43

But I'm sharing this because it comes from the exact same context.

    11:44-11:46

The word "sincere" means without wax.

    11:48-12:04

Because if a dealer had a pot that he knew was intact, wasn't broken, and he wasn't trying to fool anybody by holding it together with wax, he would put a sign in front of that pot that would say this pot is sincere.

    12:05-12:08

    Meaning it's without wax.

    12:13-12:15

    Meaning it is authentic.

    12:17-12:22

And you're like, all right, okay, Jeff, now I know what to do next time I go to Walmart to buy a pot.

    12:23-12:33

    What's the point? Here's the point. Don't be a phony. That's the point. Don't be a phony.

    12:33-12:51

Christian, you are a child of God, and that identity should make you concerned about your integrity. The Bible says you're an ambassador of Christ. That should make you concerned about your reputation.

    12:55-12:57

    Don't be a phony. Don't pretend.

    12:58-13:06

Listen, don't pretend to be one way in church when you are a different way the other six days a week.

    13:08-13:20

Don't pretend to be one way in here with their Christian friends and then you're another way when you're at work, when you're at school, when you're at home.

    13:22-13:23

    It's about your integrity.

    13:24-13:26

I heard one preacher this past week put it this way.

    13:26-13:27

    It really stuck with me.

    13:28-13:39

He said, you know, when you make bread, you can't just throw all the ingredients into a pan and throw it in the oven and pull out bread.

    13:40-13:41

    Doesn't work that way.

    13:42-13:48

Why not? Because you have to stir the ingredients together, don't you?

    13:51-13:56

You have to make sure that all of the ingredients are touching each other.

    13:56-14:03

And in the same way, you need to make sure that every part of your life touches every other part.

    14:04-14:19

Meaning this, what you believe should be consistent in every single area of your life, at work, at school, at home, at church, it's all the same.

    14:21-14:21

    That's integrity.

    14:27-14:28

    You want to be sincere?

    14:30-14:33

You wanna be not known as a phony?

    14:36-14:38

Well, this is about the choices that you make.

    14:42-14:45

You see the flow, look at verses nine and 10, look at the flow.

    14:45-14:54

He says, Paul's praying that you have knowledge and discernment so that you approve what is excellent so that you're pure and blameless.

    14:54-15:02

In other words, Paul says, have discernment so that you can make the best choices so that you're sincere, you're authentic.

    15:05-15:06

    It's about your choices.

    15:06-15:12

And the first choice that you have to make, I will use discernment when I make choices.

    15:15-15:20

And I will evaluate my choices, not just simply in terms of what's right and what's wrong.

    15:23-15:27

I'm shooting for what is excellent.

    15:28-17:13

I'm shooting for what is best. And if for some reason your integrity and your reputation, if those things aren't enough motivation for you to be concerned about making the best choices, we'll give you another one. Look at the text. He says, for the day of Christ filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ to the glory and praise of God. There's your motivation. We want to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ. Someday you're going to stand before Jesus Christ. And the only thing that's going to matter on that day is your sincerity. Meaning this, you might trick us into thinking that you know Jesus Christ, but you haven't fooled Him. And on that day, on that day, don't you want to be able to say, "I love you, Lord. I received the gift of salvation that you've given through your death and your resurrection. I received that. And Jesus, you saw how I sincerely tried to honor you by the choices that I made.

    17:17-17:19

That's why discernment is so important.

    17:23-17:28

But as we said earlier, you're going to face things that are gray areas.

    17:30-17:32

You're gonna face things that, you know what?

    17:32-17:37

The Bible doesn't specifically address this thing.

    17:37-17:41

How do I make the best decision?

    17:41-17:44

The gray areas is what we're talking about here, right?

    17:45-17:50

Situations where it's hard to tell what is right.

    17:53-17:55

We gotta be clear, we're talking about gray areas here.

    17:56-18:01

We're not talking about issues of, should I steal from work?

    18:02-18:05

Oh no, the Bible's pretty clear about that one.

    18:05-18:14

Or, "Hey, I received Jesus. Should I get baptized?" That's not an issue because the Bible's very clear about that.

    18:15-18:17

Yes, we are commanded to be baptized in response.

    18:18-18:22

Or, "I'm facing kind of a gray area, Pastor Jeff.

    18:22-18:27

Is it okay to murder my boss?" Like, no, no, that's not a gray area at all.

    18:30-18:43

We're talking about areas that don't have a book, chapter and verse that I could take you to and say, "Well, you absolutely should make this choice "because of what God clearly said here." You hear these all the time.

    18:43-18:45

Maybe some of you are struggling with them right now.

    18:48-18:50

Maybe for some it's like, "Well, is it okay?

    18:52-18:54

"Is it okay for me to drink alcohol occasionally?

    18:54-19:00

"I mean, I know what the Bible says about drunkenness, "but what if I occasionally drink alcohol "and I don't get drunk?

    19:03-19:12

"Is it okay for me to smoke cigarettes?" The Bible doesn't specifically say, "Thou shalt not smoke 'em if you got 'em," or whatever.

    19:16-19:18

Is it okay to listen to secular music?

    19:26-19:29

Is it okay to buy lottery tickets?

    19:31-19:40

I mean, the Bible doesn't say, Thou shalt keep on scratching, whatever that weasel says on those commercials.

    19:43-19:50

And you're like, "Hang on, hang on, Jeff. Doesn't the church have..." What, it's not a weasel?

    19:51-19:52

    What is it?

    19:53-19:54

    Oh, it's a groundhog.

    19:55-19:58

Well, I guess that makes more sense.

    19:59-19:59

    (congregation laughing)

    20:05-20:06

    Not a zoologist.

    20:06-20:07

    (congregation laughing)

    20:09-20:11

I have groundhogs in my yard.

    20:11-20:12

They don't wear shirts and play the lottery.

    20:13-20:14

    (congregation laughing)

    20:16-20:17

Well, you might be like, hang on, Jeff.

    20:18-20:22

Doesn't the church have rules about these things, these gray areas?

    20:22-20:23

    Doesn't the church have rules?

    20:24-20:27

And my answer to you is absolutely not.

    20:28-20:28

    Do you know why?

    20:29-20:31

    Because that is called legalism.

    20:31-20:39

If I start giving you the list of rules of here's what you can do and here's what you can't do, when it's things that are not covered in God's word, that is legalism.

    20:39-20:45

We absolutely do not have rules about those things because these things are matters of conviction.

    20:49-20:50

    So what do you do?

    20:52-20:56

How do you take principles from God's word to make the best choices?

    20:58-21:03

I just want to share with you today something that my pastor, Pastor Bob taught me many years ago.

    21:03-21:07

I've heard him teach us and it always stuck with me and I want to commend this to you.

    21:08-21:19

But on your outline, the first Corinthians six, eight, 10 principle, when you're facing a gray area, here's five questions to ask to make the best decision in a gray area.

    21:20-21:25

All right, we'll have the verses on the screen for you, but I encourage you to take some notes.

    21:26-21:32

we're gonna be jumping out of Philippi into the Corinthian culture.

    21:34-21:36

Now the Corinthian church had a lot of issues.

    21:36-21:37

    Have you read those letters?

    21:37-21:39

They had a lot of issues.

    21:40-21:48

But you know, one scenario they faced was this, should I eat meat that was sacrificed to an idol?

    21:52-21:58

That's really not a great area I've had to counsel people on, but let me catch us up to speed here.

    21:59-22:10

The Greeks and the Romans, the pagans, the pagan Greeks and Romans, they believed that there were evil spirits everywhere.

    22:10-22:20

And they had this really goofy belief that what these evil spirits would do is possess animals that were to be eaten.

    22:22-22:27

And then when you ate the animal, That was how the evil spirit got inside you.

    22:29-22:29

    All right?

    22:30-22:32

    So they had this belief.

    22:32-22:34

Well, that meat's got, maybe that meat has an evil spirit.

    22:34-22:37

And if I eat it, now the evil spirit's gonna live in me.

    22:37-22:45

So what they would do is they would sacrifice that animal to their gods, their Mickey Mouse pantheon of gods.

    22:45-22:47

They would sacrifice the animal to the gods.

    22:48-22:53

And they believed that that got the evil spirit out of the steak.

    22:54-22:56

Well, then they would have their pagan festivals.

    22:57-23:07

They'd have their big pagan parties where they would eat this meat that has now been freshly exercised, but whatever they didn't eat at their parties would end up down at the market.

    23:09-23:20

And everybody knew, yeah, that meat was sacrificed to a pagan god, and now they're selling it.

    23:21-23:28

So the issue the Corinthian church faced was this, is it okay for Christians to eat that kind of meat?

    23:31-23:32

    And there were two camps.

    23:35-23:51

You had people that came out of that background, maybe they were pagans that came to Christ and they knew all of this stuff and they didn't want anything to do with the old lifestyle, the old pagan lifestyle.

    23:51-23:52

So they were like, "You can't eat that.

    23:53-23:54

No, no, no, no, no, you can't eat that.

    23:55-23:56

Do you know what that was used for?

    23:57-23:59

That was used for pagan worship.

    23:59-24:01

    You can't eat that.

    24:02-24:08

Like if you're a believer in Jesus Christ, you shouldn't have anything to do with that." That was one camp.

    24:09-24:16

And then you had another camp that was like, "Look, a hamburger is a hamburger.

    24:17-24:19

The boogeyman doesn't live in the hamburger.

    24:20-24:22

It's just meat, like, come on.

    24:23-24:25

So you had these two camps.

    24:27-24:27

    So what do you do?

    24:27-24:28

    What do you do?

    24:28-24:33

Because again, again, there's not a, thus saith the Lord on that.

    24:35-24:36

    So what do I do?

    24:39-24:40

Paul talks a lot about this.

    24:42-24:43

    Gives us some principles here.

    24:44-24:45

Encourage you to write this down.

    24:45-24:49

I encourage you to keep these notes.

    24:50-24:59

Stash them in your Bible, because when you're facing a gray area, this will help you make the decision that honors the Lord.

    25:01-25:01

    All right?

    25:03-25:06

Five questions, principles drawn from 1 Corinthians.

    25:06-25:09

Number one, first question you have to ask is this, is it permissible?

    25:11-25:14

This thing that I want to do, this gray area, is it permissible?

    25:15-25:20

That comes from 1 Corinthians 6, 12, where Paul says, "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.

    25:21-25:26

All things are lawful for me, but I will not be dominated by anything.

    25:28-25:30

I wanna focus on the phrase, all things are lawful for me.

    25:30-25:39

And see that came up a couple of times and many scholars believe, and I lean this way as well, that that was actually a slogan that they threw around.

    25:39-25:43

It was something that the Christians said, I'm free in Christ.

    25:44-25:45

    So everything's permissible for me.

    25:45-25:49

I can do anything that I want because I'm free in Christ.

    25:49-25:52

And I know Christians like that, even until today.

    25:52-25:55

I can do whatever I want because I'm free in Christ.

    25:57-26:07

And I would say this, yes, it is true that if you are truly saved, there is nothing you can do to lose your salvation.

    26:09-26:09

    That is true.

    26:11-26:13

But do you know what else is true?

    26:14-26:20

is freedom is never an excuse to sin.

    26:24-26:35

And according to God's word, we are called to submit to God, obviously, but also we are called to submit to the governing authorities.

    26:36-26:47

So long as the government does not command us or mandate us to sin, to do something God forbids or to not do something God commands.

    26:47-26:53

So long as the government isn't calling us to sin, biblically we are to submit to the governing authorities.

    26:54-26:59

So the first question you have to ask yourself in a gray area is this, is it permissible?

    27:01-27:03

    Would the Bible allow this?

    27:03-27:06

And is it legal according to our laws?

    27:07-27:09

    Is this permissible?

    27:09-27:10

    That's the first question.

    27:11-27:16

Second question is, is it beneficial?

    27:20-27:22

Same verse, all things are lawful for me.

    27:22-27:26

Look at this next phrase, but not all things are helpful.

    27:27-27:28

    Paul recognized that.

    27:28-27:31

Not everything is good for me.

    27:33-27:33

    Good for me how?

    27:33-27:35

Not everything is good for my body.

    27:37-27:43

This is the body that God has given me to navigate through this life.

    27:44-27:46

Not everything is good for the health of this body.

    27:46-27:48

Not everything is good for my mind.

    27:48-27:49

We talked about that last week.

    27:50-27:52

You have to keep your mind renewed.

    27:52-27:56

Not everything is good for my mind.

    27:57-27:58

And not everything is good for my spirit.

    28:00-28:08

So the second question you have to ask yourself is, in making this decision, Is it something that's going to be good for me?

    28:10-28:11

We're gonna say it in the negative.

    28:11-28:15

Is this something that could be harmful to me in some way?

    28:16-28:18

    Is it beneficial?

    28:22-28:26

Third question is this, could it get me under its power?

    28:28-28:31

Same verse, all things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful.

    28:32-28:34

All things are lawful for me.

    28:35-28:44

"But I will not be dominated by anything." And that last phrase, "I will not be dominated by anything.

    28:45-28:51

"Could it get me under its power?" We've spent time talking about addiction of any kind.

    28:52-28:57

And what addiction really is, ultimately, is a worship disorder.

    28:58-29:04

Jesus Christ is to have all of your affection and all of your attention.

    29:07-29:12

And when you have an addiction, something else is getting that.

    29:12-29:13

    It's a worship disorder.

    29:13-29:20

And for the Christian, we say, I'm not a slave to anything or anyone except Jesus Christ.

    29:21-29:26

So the third question is, is this something I could get addicted to?

    29:29-29:30

Could it get me under its power?

    29:33-30:02

The fourth question is this, "Could it cause a brother to stumble?" And here we jump to 1 Corinthians 8, verses 12 and 13, Paul says, "Thus, sinning against your brothers and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ." Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.

    30:03-30:14

So the fourth question is this, this decision that I'm thinking about making, this gray area, how is my decision going to affect other people?

    30:19-30:21

Could it be a stumbling block to others?

    30:23-30:25

And right now, if you're like, who cares?

    30:26-30:28

I don't care what other people think about me.

    30:28-30:29

    I don't care.

    30:31-30:35

I would say that's an extremely immature attitude.

    30:37-30:45

There is nothing godly or wise or loving with an attitude like that.

    30:45-30:46

    Do you see Paul's attitude?

    30:47-30:58

Again, you had people that came out of this pagan background and they're Christians and they're like, "Oh no, no, you can't eat that, you can't eat that." So what are you gonna do?

    30:58-31:06

Walk in eating one of these, you know, boogeyman burgers or whatever, and like, "Oh, I'm free in Christ," right in front of this guy?

    31:07-31:10

That would be like showing up at an AA meeting with alcohol.

    31:11-31:12

Like, why would you do that?

    31:13-31:25

Don't you care that somebody struggled in this area and they're trying to get on track and they're walk with Christ, and you're just gonna launch your freedom or whatever?

    31:27-31:36

Paul's like, look, if I thought for a second that eating meat in front of somebody would cause him to stumble, Paul's like, I'm a vegan.

    31:37-31:39

    As horrible as that is.

    31:44-31:52

He says, "I'll never eat meat." So could this decision that I'm making hurt a weaker brother or sister?

    31:53-31:55

Could it cause a brother to stumble?

    31:57-32:01

And the fifth question is this, is it glorifying to God?

    32:07-32:20

And there he jumped to 1 Corinthians 10 31, where he says, "So whether you eat or drink, Or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

    32:23-32:26

That's the last and ultimately most important question.

    32:27-32:30

Can I do this unto the Lord?

    32:31-32:38

Can I stop and thank God and praise God and say, "God, this is done to your glory.

    32:39-32:46

God, I'm doing this to honor you." You do that before you make your decision.

    32:48-32:52

Can I do this to the glory of God?

    32:58-33:02

Do you have a gray area that you're struggling with?

    33:04-33:05

    Well, there's your answer.

    33:07-33:08

I'm not going to tell you what to do.

    33:11-33:16

You let God's word and God's Holy Spirit bring you to conviction.

    33:20-33:22

I got a couple of minutes here, let's try it.

    33:22-33:23

    You wanna try it?

    33:25-33:25

    Yeah, let's try it.

    33:26-33:32

Let's do, we talked about the, we talked about that groundhog playing the lottery, right?

    33:33-33:35

    What about for Christians?

    33:36-33:39

Is it okay for a Christian to play the lottery?

    33:40-33:45

And I'm not going to tell you what to do, but let's run it through the test to see what's the best choice.

    33:48-33:48

    Is it permissible?

    33:49-33:50

    Yeah.

    33:51-33:53

Do you have to be a certain age to play the lottery?

    33:53-33:54

I probably should have looked that up.

    33:54-33:56

Don't you have to be a certain age?

    33:56-34:00

You're not like sending your preschooler with his ripped pants to buy lottery tickets, are you?

    34:02-34:02

    18?

    34:03-34:03

    I don't know.

    34:06-34:09

OK, so if you're an adult-- I'm talking to the adults now.

    34:09-34:10

If you're an adult, it is permissible.

    34:11-34:13

You are legally allowed to buy a lottery ticket.

    34:15-34:16

    Okay, check.

    34:17-34:18

    How about the next question?

    34:18-34:18

    Is it beneficial?

    34:21-34:23

Is it beneficial for you to play the lottery?

    34:24-34:27

And you're like, it will be if I win.

    34:30-34:33

And I'm like, because that happens all the time.

    34:35-34:38

Lottery is just a tax on people that are bad at math.

    34:38-34:40

    (congregation laughing)

    34:45-34:46

    Is it beneficial?

    34:47-34:48

    Eh.

    34:51-34:55

I would say no, but you wrestle with the Lord or not yourself.

    34:56-34:59

How about, we'll go to the next question then.

    35:00-35:01

Could it get me under its power?

    35:04-35:05

    It's a form of gambling.

    35:07-35:08

    Is gambling addictive?

    35:11-35:13

Well, I think it is, but that's not even my opinion.

    35:13-35:19

Do you notice every time they have one of them casino commercials, gambling problem, call this number.

    35:19-35:20

    Like, what?

    35:20-35:26

Like, you're advertising something, and then you're immediately cutting yourself off at the knees, right?

    35:27-35:28

    Why do they do that?

    35:29-35:30

    Because it's addictive.

    35:30-35:40

So I would say, hmm, hmm, maybe this is helping me make this decision on if I should buy the lottery ticket.

    35:41-35:44

What about, could it cause a brother to stumble?

    35:48-35:49

    What do you think?

    35:49-35:50

Could it cause a brother to stumble?

    35:51-35:58

If somebody came into your house and you're scratching a lottery ticket, could it cause them to stumble?

    36:03-36:03

    What do you think?

    36:06-36:07

Yes or no, what do you think?

    36:11-36:14

Maybe, yeah, maybe if they have a gambling addiction, I don't know.

    36:15-36:16

Even that is just like, eh.

    36:18-36:20

Then number five, is it glorifying to God?

    36:24-36:35

I'll tell you what my conviction is on that, is this absolutely isn't because you're taking God's money that he gave you to try to win more.

    36:39-36:43

So you see, that kind of helps you make the decision, doesn't it?

    36:45-36:46

    How about another one?

    36:47-36:50

Is it okay for me to go to the bar with my friends?

    36:51-36:57

Like, look, my friends are going to the bar, I don't drink, but is it okay for me to go to the bar with my friends?

    36:57-36:58

Just to hang out with them.

    37:00-37:01

    Be a witness, all that.

    37:02-37:04

    Well, ask the questions.

    37:04-37:05

    Is it permissible?

    37:06-37:07

    Yeah, sure.

    37:08-37:09

Is there an H for that?

    37:11-37:12

    Yeah, it's permissible.

    37:12-37:16

As an adult, I am legally allowed to go into a bar.

    37:18-37:19

    Is it beneficial?

    37:20-37:21

Is it gonna be good for me?

    37:23-37:25

Is it gonna be helpful for me in any way?

    37:32-37:43

Well, if I had a problem with drinking, that's going to kind of lead us to another question here but maybe not.

    37:43-37:44

    I don't know.

    37:44-37:46

Or even if I say, "Okay, you know what?

    37:46-37:50

It's not going to harm me, so I'm just going to move on." Number three, could it get me under its power?

    37:51-38:06

Well, if I had a drinking problem and I'm putting myself in a place of temptation, when Jesus told me to pray, lead me not into temptation, see some wisdom maybe in avoiding that, if that's my situation.

    38:09-38:12

Still kinda on the fence here maybe, right?

    38:12-38:15

But then you get to number four, could it cause a brother to stumble?

    38:17-38:26

Hmm, what if I'm involved in like addiction recovery ministry and these guys find out that I'm hanging out at the bar?

    38:29-38:31

The number five is glorifying to God.

    38:33-38:36

Like I'm bar hopping in the name of Jesus.

    38:38-38:41

Again, you gotta come up with the conviction, right?

    38:42-38:43

    What's another area?

    38:43-38:44

We got a minute, shout one out.

    38:46-38:46

    You got one?

    38:46-38:47

    You got a gray area?

    38:51-38:51

    What's that?

    38:52-38:53

    Dating somebody?

    38:54-38:55

    Can we be more specific?

    39:04-39:11

Well, I think you absolutely should use that, but I think maybe something more specific would be helpful on answering the questions here.

    39:12-39:13

Oh, I got a bunch of them here.

    39:14-39:14

    How about this one?

    39:15-39:17

Is it okay to watch an R-rated movie?

    39:19-39:20

    Is it permissible?

    39:21-39:22

    Yes, if I'm of age.

    39:22-39:23

    Is it beneficial?

    39:24-39:25

    Oh, hmm, hmm.

    39:26-39:29

What kind of stuff is gonna be pumped into my head here, right?

    39:30-39:31

Could it get me under its power?

    39:33-39:43

If I have an addiction for immoral, sensual things, and that's what's being portrayed in the movie, I'm feeding that monkey and I shouldn't.

    39:44-39:48

Could it cause a brother to stumble if somebody walked in and saw me watching this movie?

    39:49-39:50

Would I be embarrassed by that?

    39:51-39:57

Would I be okay with saying, "Hey, sit down and watch this with me." Is this glorifying to God?

    40:01-40:02

    See?

    40:06-40:34

Any gray area that you face, ask these questions and ask the Holy Spirit to clearly convict you on not just what is right and wrong, but on what's an okay choice, but what's the absolute best choice that I can make.

    40:35-40:38

I'd like you to bow your heads as the worship team makes their way forward.

    40:40-40:41

And I just wanna pray over you church.

    40:46-40:48

The same thing that Paul prayed for the Philippians.

    40:49-41:11

He said, "It is my prayer that your love may abound more and more." And Father, I echo this and say, God, I pray that this church would be a church of love and forgiveness and brotherly affection and self-sacrificing service and all the things that you've called us to in Agape love.

    41:13-41:17

Father, I pray that we would grow in love for one another as a church.

    41:20-41:40

As Paul prayed with knowledge and all discernment, Father, I pray that you would fill the minds, my brothers and sisters here in this church, with the knowledge of your word, and with that, Father, that we would have discernment to be able to approve what is excellent.

    41:43-42:02

Father, I pray that we wouldn't just fly through doing whatever's in front of us to moment it, but we would stop and evaluate, as your word calls us to do, to test everything, to discern what is the most excellent choice.

    42:04-42:07

Because, Father, we wanna be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.

    42:07-42:10

Father, remind us that we are going to stand before you someday.

    42:12-42:14

And we wanna be people of integrity.

    42:15-42:26

Not putting on a show, not making people think that we make good decisions when secretly we don't.

    42:29-42:43

But the power of your Holy Spirit, Father, the wisdom of your word, permeates and saturates every single area of our lives.

    42:45-42:51

Be glorified, Father, through the choices that your children make.

    42:52-42:54

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

  1. What was your big take-away from this passage / message?

  2. Why is it important to discern what is best, not just what is “right and wrong”? See Philippians 1:10.

  3. Name a “grey area” you’ve personally struggled with. How does the 1 Corinthians 6-8-10 principle help you come to a conviction in that area?

I would ask that you would please pray for me to be faithful to communicate God's Word and I will pray for you to have a heart open to receiving the Word of God today. Let's pray. Father in heaven we believe that your word is like a lion that we don't need to defend it we just got to let it out of the cage and it'll take care of itself. So I'm praying Father that that's what's happening here over these next several minutes that your Word is just let loose and we trust your Holy Spirit to work with the Word in ways that maybe we can't fully comprehend, but we know it works and we believe, Father. Glorify your name through your word we ask in Jesus name.

    01:48-01:51

And all of God's people said, amen.

    01:51-01:56

Open up your Bibles with me please to the book of Romans chapter 12.

    01:57-02:04

And we're in this series called intentional wisdom, intentional because nothing important happens by accident, right?

    02:06-02:07

    Intentional wisdom.

    02:08-02:11

And this series is the lost art of discernment.

    02:11-02:21

Last week, we talked about discernment And we saw John saying, "Stop believing everything that you hear.

    02:22-02:32

Test everything, use discernment." Speaking of, look at Romans 12.

    02:32-02:34

We're just gonna look at two verses today.

    02:41-02:56

Paul writes, "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

    02:58-03:14

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may, oh, there it is, Discern.

    03:18-03:19

    Discern what?

    03:20-03:25

You may discern what is the will of God.

    03:26-03:31

What is good and acceptable and perfect.

    03:33-03:40

So this passage is about discerning the will of God.

    03:41-03:42

And that's what we're gonna talk about today.

    03:43-03:55

the will of God, because quite honestly, a lot of Christians, when it comes to understanding the will of God, they get a little weird, a little weird about that.

    03:57-03:58

    Like, what do you mean?

    03:58-03:59

Well, let me give you a couple of examples.

    03:59-04:05

When I was in Bible college, there was a guy that was dating this girl and she broke up with him.

    04:06-04:09

He showed up at her dorm room, pounding.

    04:10-04:12

God told us that we're supposed to be together.

    04:12-04:15

God told me, God told me that we're supposed to be together.

    04:18-04:21

Hopefully God told her to call the police.

    04:25-04:26

    But God told him.

    04:30-04:30

    Did he?

    04:32-04:55

And then fast forward, one of my very first counseling sessions, a lady had come to the church office And I said, "Well, what seems to be the problem?" And she said, "I'm just," she goes, "I don't know what to do "because I feel like if I come to church, "maybe a friend is gonna call me at home "and I'm gonna miss that call "and I'm gonna miss the opportunity to help my friend.

    04:57-05:03

"But if I stay home waiting for a call from a friend "that might need my help, I don't come to church "and I miss maybe what God wants to teach me at church.

    05:03-05:18

"I don't know what to do." And listen, that might sound goofy or silly or trivial to us, but this poor woman was in tears because she was so concerned that she was going to miss the will of God for her life.

    05:21-05:31

Had another person who's a friend of mine whose daughter got married to a guy that, not great, let's just leave it at that, right?

    05:32-05:33

    Not a great guy.

    05:35-05:37

And I was shocked when he said, you know what?

    05:37-05:39

maybe my daughter should just get a divorce.

    05:39-05:41

And I was shocked to hear this man say that.

    05:41-05:51

And he said, because, you know, maybe it just wasn't God's will that she married this guy.

    05:55-05:58

I'm like, is that how it works?

    05:59-06:05

In any of these scenarios, and I can give you a lot more, but in any of these scenarios, is that how the will of God works?

    06:11-06:12

    (congregation murmurs)

    06:13-06:14

    What is God's will?

    06:17-06:24

You know, we face situations as Christians where we just wanna know what God wants.

    06:26-06:31

Maybe you're buying a house and you're thinking, is it God's will that I buy this house?

    06:31-06:35

Is it God's will that I live in this neighborhood next to these people?

    06:35-06:37

How do I know this is God's will?

    06:37-06:39

Or maybe you're trying to decide on a college to go to.

    06:40-06:40

    What is God's will?

    06:41-06:42

    Like, where should I study?

    06:42-06:45

Like, how do I know where God wants me to go to school?

    06:45-06:47

Or maybe it's a career choice.

    06:47-06:52

Like, what does God want me to do with my life in a vocational sense?

    06:52-06:55

Or how do I know what he wants me to do?

    06:55-06:57

Or maybe it's choosing a church.

    06:57-07:02

How do I know which church I should be a part of where I'm serving God?

    07:02-07:32

What if I'm in the wrong church wrong ministry and what like, am I gonna show up in heaven someday and God's like you completely missed where I wanted you. Like is that possible? Or what about, oh here's a big one, but the person you're supposed to marry. You know some people think there's exactly one person out there that I'm supposed to marry and boy I sure hope I find her. Because what if I marry the wrong person? What if I marry the person that wasn't God's will for me to marry.

    07:33-07:37

And then we have kids, and maybe these kids weren't supposed to exist.

    07:38-07:45

And now we've completely taken the apple cart of God's will and turned it over.

    07:50-07:56

What about if you have a spouse that's unfaithful?

    08:00-08:01

What does God want me to do?

    08:02-08:05

What is God's will in this situation?

    08:06-08:07

What if you have a loved one on life support?

    08:10-08:12

And it has fallen on you to make the decision.

    08:16-08:20

If it's time to turn off the machines and let nature take its course.

    08:24-08:25

    Serious issue, isn't it?

    08:26-08:27

How do I know God's will?

    08:28-08:29

How do I know God's will?

    08:30-08:32

    Is my life mapped out?

    08:33-08:41

Like God has this path for me, and I gotta make sure that I stay on that path so that I'm always in God's will.

    08:43-08:46

That leads to the question, well, what if I get off that path?

    08:49-08:50

    Can I get back on?

    08:51-08:59

Or what if I put myself in a situation, like a marriage situation or a career situation, or it's just not so easy to jump back on a path.

    09:01-09:04

Have I forfeited what God wants for me?

    09:05-09:06

    Is that my life?

    09:07-09:10

Just a waste because I forfeited what God wants for me.

    09:11-09:15

Well, the Bible says so much about God's will.

    09:17-09:23

And as followers of Jesus Christ, we should want God's will more than anybody.

    09:26-09:28

So the question on the table is, how do I know what it is?

    09:31-09:36

Well, we have a lot of techniques that we use to try to determine God's will.

    09:37-09:38

These aren't great ones, by the way.

    09:38-09:42

I'm gonna give you a few that we use that aren't great techniques for learning God's will.

    09:43-09:44

    One is feelings.

    09:46-09:48

Some people say, you just gotta trust your heart.

    09:50-09:50

    That's a dumb idea.

    09:51-09:52

You know what the Bible says about your heart?

    09:53-09:54

    It's deceitful above all things.

    09:54-09:55

    you gonna trust that liar?

    09:59-10:00

    True or false?

    10:01-10:05

Plus when it comes to feelings, look, feelings change constantly.

    10:06-10:07

    They, feelings change.

    10:09-10:13

One minute you're like, I love this woman more than anything in the world.

    10:13-10:17

The next minute you're like, I really don't wanna be around her.

    10:20-10:22

I mean, not me, I'm speaking for somebody else.

    10:22-10:23

    (congregation laughing)

    10:25-10:26

    You knew that.

    10:28-10:33

But you can't just say, well, okay, I, this is God's will because I have peace about it.

    10:33-10:34

    I have peace about it.

    10:34-10:36

Do you know who else had peace?

    10:37-10:38

Was Jonah sleeping on the boat?

    10:39-10:43

He had total peace about the decisions he was making in life, running from God.

    10:44-10:47

Peace about it's not a great indicator.

    10:47-10:55

And oh, by the way, Proverbs 3 tells us to lean not Oh yeah, yeah, you've heard that one.

    10:55-10:56

Lean not on your own understanding.

    10:58-11:02

Another way that people try to determine God's will is the old do nothing.

    11:04-11:05

We're just gonna let things happen.

    11:05-11:06

    We'll just let it happen.

    11:06-11:07

I'm not gonna make a choice.

    11:08-11:12

We'll just let things happen and I'm just gonna sit back and not do anything.

    11:14-11:15

    Oh, that's not great.

    11:16-11:18

For some people, it's a flip a coin, right?

    11:18-11:19

    You flip a coin.

    11:20-11:23

Like, because in the Bible, didn't they cast lots?

    11:25-11:30

Right, that was a way in the Bible that they determined God's will, they cast lots.

    11:31-11:33

There's a problem with that though.

    11:34-11:37

Do you realize that stopped when the Holy Spirit came?

    11:38-11:39

    They stopped casting lots.

    11:41-11:44

Choosing Matthias, that was the last time that happened.

    11:44-11:49

And then the Holy Spirit came and they never did it again to determine God's will.

    11:51-11:53

But we're Christians, we do Bible stuff, right?

    11:54-11:56

And so we lay out a fleece, right?

    11:56-11:57

You ever heard somebody say that?

    11:57-11:59

That's how you determine God's will, you lay out a fleece.

    12:00-12:01

And I would suggest to you, that's not a great idea.

    12:02-12:02

    Why?

    12:03-12:10

Because if you study that story with Gideon in the Old Testament, when he laid out the fleece, there was a problem.

    12:10-12:12

    He already knew God's will.

    12:12-12:14

It was crystal clear to him.

    12:15-12:19

So him laying out a fleece was demonstrating doubt, not faith.

    12:20-12:22

He ends up commanding God what to do.

    12:22-12:27

And by the way, if it was such a great way to determine God's will, why didn't it satisfy Gideon the first time he did it?

    12:29-12:30

He's like, yeah, can we do that again?

    12:31-12:33

Laying out a fleece, not a great idea.

    12:36-12:38

Like, so what is God's will?

    12:39-12:40

    Well, we just read it.

    12:42-12:46

We just read it in Romans 12, one and two.

    12:47-12:49

So here's the sermon, here's the short version.

    12:55-12:56

    Listen very closely, please.

    12:58-13:00

God's will is not about what you do.

    13:01-13:04

God's will is about the kind of person that you are.

    13:05-13:08

That's what Paul says in Romans 12, one through two.

    13:09-13:10

    I'm gonna say that again.

    13:11-13:12

God's will is not about what you do.

    13:13-13:17

God's will is about what kind of person you are.

    13:19-13:24

And if you'd like me to unpack that a little bit, that's what we're gonna do.

    13:24-13:26

On your outline, what is God's will for me?

    13:29-13:35

And for the outline here, we made it as easy as ABC, all right, because it is this easy.

    13:38-13:42

Don't go banging on any dorm room doors, all right?

    13:44-13:48

Don't get all sideways wondering if you're in the right geographical spot.

    13:49-13:50

    That's not how it works.

    13:51-13:52

God's will is not about what you do.

    13:53-13:55

It's about the kind of person you are.

    13:56-13:56

    Let's unpack that.

    13:56-13:58

This is exactly what he's saying here.

    13:59-14:00

    ABCs, all right?

    14:02-14:04

Number one, what is God's will for me?

    14:05-14:06

    Alter, get on it.

    14:09-14:11

    Alter, get on it.

    14:11-14:12

    This is where it starts.

    14:12-14:13

    Look at verse one.

    14:13-14:15

This is where it has to start.

    14:16-14:17

    What's God's will for me?

    14:17-14:30

I appeal to you therefore brothers by the mercies of God to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

    14:31-14:33

Do you know what the Christian life is?

    14:34-14:37

The Christian life is one big act of worship.

    14:38-14:38

    That's what it is.

    14:39-14:42

And if you think worship is, oh, that's the music time when Ashley's up here with the crew.

    14:42-14:45

And yes, that's part of it.

    14:47-14:48

    That's part of it.

    14:50-14:55

So are the other 167 hours and 40 minutes of the week.

    14:56-14:58

It's all one big worship service.

    14:58-14:59

    That's what your life is.

    15:02-15:11

Your life is a worship service, giving yourself to God in response for what he has done for you.

    15:13-15:17

Now, Paul spent 11 chapters in Romans laying all this out.

    15:19-15:21

And you're like, you wanna review all that?

    15:21-15:22

I don't have time for that today.

    15:23-15:29

But I want you to notice, he says, he sums it all up with one little phrase right here in verse one.

    15:29-15:29

    Do you see that?

    15:30-15:31

    By the mercies of God.

    15:33-15:34

Do you know what mercy is?

    15:36-15:40

Mercy is when God doesn't give you what you deserve.

    15:41-15:42

Do you know what you deserve?

    15:43-15:45

We deserve, yes, we deserve hell.

    15:46-15:47

    That's what we deserve.

    15:48-15:54

Because we have this holy creator and we have sinned against him.

    15:54-15:59

We have rebelled against him by our words, by our attitudes, by our actions.

    15:59-16:02

We are stiff-necked and hard-hearted people.

    16:04-16:09

And we have rebelled against our creator when we sin.

    16:12-16:13

    We deserve hell.

    16:13-16:16

We deserve eternal separation from God.

    16:16-16:25

God didn't give us what we deserve because he sent his son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross, to take God's wrath on himself in our place.

    16:26-16:28

    So we have God's mercy.

    16:33-16:37

And that's why the psalmist, we echo the question of the psalmist, Psalm 116, verse 12.

    16:38-16:52

"What shall I render to the Lord for all his benefits to me?" The only response that we could possibly have is to give God an offering.

    16:53-16:57

    And that offering is you.

    17:01-17:13

Paul's obviously using some Old Testament type language here and we studied a lot of this when we went through the book of Hebrews, but the priest would offer a dead sacrifice.

    17:15-17:23

When Jesus Christ died on the cross, he was fulfilling all of the Old Testament, the Mosaic, Jesus Christ fulfilled all of that.

    17:26-17:32

We live in a new covenant and you're like, "Well, is there sacrifice in the new covenant?" Oh, yes, there is.

    17:33-17:34

    It's you.

    17:35-17:37

    You are the sacrifice now.

    17:38-17:46

A living sacrifice, and you have to see your life, your very life as always being on the altar of God.

    17:48-17:52

That's why he says, "Present your bodies." What does that mean?

    17:53-17:54

Present, it means to offer up.

    17:54-17:55

    It means to yield.

    17:57-18:00

It means to put your body on the altar.

    18:00-18:04

And the tense of the word here is over and over.

    18:05-18:06

    It's not a one-time thing.

    18:07-18:08

    You giving yourself to God?

    18:08-18:10

Oh yeah, I did back in '97, I was baptized, whatever.

    18:11-18:14

    No, it's over and over.

    18:15-18:16

It's constantly saying, God, this is yours.

    18:18-18:22

My life, my everything, this all belongs to you.

    18:23-18:28

I have a living sacrifice laid upon your altar.

    18:33-18:47

So let me ask you, thinking back to the Old Testament, thinking back to the priest, thinking back to the animals, thinking about the animal that was brought to be sacrificed, the sacrifice on the altar, how committed was that animal when it was on the altar?

    18:51-18:52

    100%, right?

    18:53-18:56

It was 100% offered to God.

    18:56-19:06

You see, the animal wasn't put on the altar, bloodied and beaten, and then scamper away afterwards and say, "Well, I'm glad that's over.

    19:06-19:08

That was rough." That wasn't how it worked.

    19:08-19:11

It was wholly dedicated to God.

    19:12-19:19

And that is exactly what God requires of every follower of Jesus Christ.

    19:21-19:22

    It's a full commitment.

    19:24-19:28

And he says here, this is your spiritual worship.

    19:32-19:38

Interestingly, that word spiritual really isn't the best translation of the Greek word.

    19:38-19:44

The Greek word here is where we get the English word logical.

    19:46-19:47

    What's he saying?

    19:49-21:07

saying this, like why in the world would I give my everything to Jesus Christ? Paul's like, "Because it's logical. That's why. Jesus is my Creator. Jesus is my Lord. Jesus Christ saved me from my self-destructive sin. Jesus Christ saved me from the eternal wrath of God so it's only logical and I give everything to Jesus Christ the only thing that makes sense my friends is to be a living sacrifice to see my very life laying on the altar of God saying I belong to him 100%. All of you, are you holding anything back? Your will? Is your will on the altar fully given to God? It's not about what I want, it's about what He What he wants, is that on the altar?

    21:10-21:11

    What about your money?

    21:13-21:15

Okay, wait a second, pal, that's my money.

    21:15-21:17

    No, it's not, it's God's.

    21:18-21:20

Somehow we think we can get on the altar without it.

    21:21-21:21

    Can you?

    21:24-21:27

Not a fully dedicated living sacrifice, it's God's.

    21:29-21:30

    What about time?

    21:33-21:37

Well, I give God this time, but this time is mine.

    21:37-21:39

Oh, is that how a sacrifice thinks?

    21:42-21:44

    No, it's all God's actually.

    21:46-21:54

But sometimes if we're going to be quite honest with ourselves and with each other, we just wanna jump off the altar.

    21:56-22:01

Look, I understand what I'm supposed to do, but I'm doing this one my way.

    22:01-22:04

Hey, you jumped off the altar there, not a great plan.

    22:06-22:10

Look, hey, I'm spending my money the way that I want.

    22:11-22:12

Hey, you're jumping off the altar there, aren't you?

    22:15-22:20

Look, I'll serve in the church, but only when it's convenient for me.

    22:23-22:25

That doesn't sound like a sacrifice at all.

    22:28-22:31

Or you know what, this person wronged me and I will never forgive them.

    22:31-22:37

I've had people tell me this, I don't care what the Bible says, I will never reconcile with that person.

    22:38-22:40

That's not how living sacrifices think.

    22:43-22:45

    Sacrifices don't work that way.

    22:45-22:52

I'm on the altar and everything about my life is dedicated to God.

    22:54-22:55

So what's God's will for me?

    22:55-22:57

That's letter A, altar, get on it.

    22:58-23:02

    B, Bible, get in it.

    23:04-23:05

Look at the first part of verse two.

    23:06-23:13

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.

    23:14-23:14

    Stop there.

    23:16-23:17

Transformed by the renewal of your mind.

    23:18-23:18

    Why? Why?

    23:19-23:20

    Because it's simple.

    23:20-23:23

What you think determines what you do.

    23:26-23:30

And look, you can leave here today and you can be all fired up.

    23:31-23:32

    You're like, you know what?

    23:35-23:37

God's right, I have not given myself as a living sacrifice.

    23:38-23:40

I've missed it, you're right, yeah, I've missed it.

    23:42-23:43

And you can be all fired up.

    23:43-23:47

You know, today's a new day, Mark it down, Father's Day, 2024.

    23:48-23:49

    I'm a living sacrifice.

    23:50-24:00

But listen, listen, if you don't change the way you think, That ain't gonna last till suppertime.

    24:05-24:06

You're gonna come off the altar.

    24:08-24:12

So I just wanna ask you, what are you filling your mind with?

    24:19-24:41

if you're constantly filling your mind with images of a sexual nature, or watching movies to any degree, or Netflix shows or whatever, where it's sexually charged material, and then you're like, "I just, that just seems to be a hangup for me.

    24:41-24:46

I just can't seem to," you know, it's because you're filling your mind with it.

    24:51-24:55

We recognize this with teenagers, right?

    24:55-24:59

Like a lot of teenagers like to listen to angry music.

    25:00-25:03

You know, "Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh." Like, "Oh, my parents stink.

    25:05-25:07

    You know, the principal stinks.

    25:08-25:13

the lady of cheat stinks, and this angry, hateful music.

    25:13-25:21

And then we wonder why our teenagers have this like chip on their shoulder and angry at the world because they're filling their mind with that stuff.

    25:22-25:24

    And it's just circulating in.

    25:28-25:30

That stuff controls how you think.

    25:30-25:37

Don't wonder while you're struggling in certain areas if that's the sewage that you're constantly pumping into your brain.

    25:40-25:46

That's why Paul says we have to constantly be renewed by the Word.

    25:46-25:53

Listen, the world is constantly trying to conform you into the world's way of thinking.

    25:59-26:04

You're like, "Jeff, this sounds like you're trying to brainwash us." I am!

    26:05-26:06

    because your brain needs washed.

    26:08-26:11

Because it's dirty and dirty things need washed.

    26:11-26:13

    So yeah, I'm brainwashing you.

    26:17-26:21

Because the world is constantly polluting you.

    26:21-26:23

Think this way, think this way.

    26:23-26:24

    Here's how you should think.

    26:24-26:25

    Turn on the TV.

    26:25-26:26

    Here's how you should think.

    26:26-26:27

    Turn on the radio.

    26:27-26:28

    Here's how you should think.

    26:29-26:29

    Get online.

    26:30-26:30

    Here's how you should think.

    26:31-26:32

    That's what the world does.

    26:33-26:34

    Like, can you be specific?

    26:34-26:35

    Sure I can.

    26:35-26:36

Just look at the last few years.

    26:38-26:39

Just look at the last few years.

    26:40-26:42

What has the world been teaching you?

    26:43-26:46

You need to fear death, right?

    26:46-26:48

The whole, remember the whole COVID thing?

    26:48-26:50

    You need to fear death.

    26:51-27:02

And I would watch politicians get on TV and say, don't go outside because that virus is waiting right outside and if you let your guard down, it's gonna get you It's gonna kill you.

    27:02-27:09

So constant, constant fear mongering, fear death, fear death, fear death.

    27:09-27:10

    What does God's word say?

    27:10-27:11

    Are we afraid of death?

    27:14-27:16

But the world is trying to get you to fear death.

    27:17-27:17

    Why?

    27:17-27:19

They want you to conform to the way they think.

    27:22-27:28

Another thing, same vein, COVID, conform, conform.

    27:29-27:30

    Let's, here's another one.

    27:30-27:32

Trust the experts, remember that, trust the experts.

    27:35-27:46

So that we're, so that we are a culture that's like, I am not thinking for myself, whatever the person on TV tells me has to be true because I have to trust the experts.

    27:46-27:52

I'm not an expert, but the guy on TV apparently is an expert and they're saying I should trust the experts.

    27:52-27:54

So I'm going to listen to everything that he says.

    27:55-27:57

That is the world conforming you.

    27:57-27:59

    (congregation laughing)

    28:00-28:01

    Oh, here's one.

    28:03-28:04

    It's Pride Month.

    28:04-28:05

    Have you noticed?

    28:05-28:06

    Have you heard?

    28:08-28:10

How's the world trying to conform you?

    28:10-28:12

    You need to accept perversion.

    28:15-28:16

    What is marriage?

    28:16-28:17

It's whatever you want it to be.

    28:17-28:18

    What is sexuality?

    28:18-28:19

It's whatever you want it to be.

    28:19-28:20

    What is gender?

    28:20-28:22

It's whatever you want it to be.

    28:22-28:24

That's the world trying to conform you.

    28:24-28:29

So the churches are like, let's fly the rainbow flag because we're inclusive.

    28:31-28:35

No, that means we've conformed to the way the world wants us to think.

    28:35-28:36

    That's what that means.

    28:42-28:45

The world wants you to think the way they want you to think.

    28:46-28:47

    Here's another one.

    28:47-28:49

    Let's kill inconvenient babies.

    28:52-28:54

"Oh, when you say it like that, that sounds so bad.

    28:54-29:02

The world's not gonna roll it out like that." That is the woman's body.

    29:03-29:07

So that should be her choice and her choice alone on what happens with that baby.

    29:08-29:11

And if she chooses to end that pregnancy, that is her choice.

    29:11-29:13

    Well, that sounds so noble.

    29:15-29:18

So that our thinking gets conformed to that.

    29:19-29:21

But at the end of the day, we're killing a baby.

    29:26-29:32

Paul says, "You need to stop letting the world tell you how to think." What's the alternative?

    29:32-29:42

He tells us, "Be transformed." That's an interesting word because it's the exact same word that was used of Jesus when he was transfigured.

    29:43-29:43

    Same word.

    29:46-29:47

    Be transformed.

    29:49-29:51

And that has to happen in your mind.

    29:52-29:54

The transformation has to start between your ears.

    29:57-30:02

And that means a steady diet of the word of God.

    30:04-30:06

You should have regular time in the Bible.

    30:06-30:10

And I want to encourage you when you do, slow down.

    30:11-30:13

    Read to understand.

    30:13-30:19

Some people are like, well, I get to get my Bible reading in and you like fly through speed read, didn't get anything, don't do that.

    30:19-30:20

    What good is that?

    30:21-30:22

    It's not a race.

    30:23-30:27

You don't get a cookie if you get Deuteronomy finished by the end of the month.

    30:27-30:28

    It doesn't work that way.

    30:29-30:32

Slow down, absorb what it says.

    30:32-30:33

    What's God saying?

    30:33-30:35

What does he want me to know?

    30:36-30:38

Is this truth reflecting in my life?

    30:38-30:39

Is this an example I should follow?

    30:39-30:41

Is this an example that I should avoid?

    30:41-30:42

    Slow down.

    30:46-30:55

By the way, I really believe that's the purpose of preaching by the way, because I know in our day, what we do up here seems so archaic.

    30:55-31:02

A guy's gonna stand up and talk at us for 30 or 40 minutes or whatever, he's gonna talk.

    31:02-31:03

    That just seems so archaic.

    31:03-31:03

    Why do we do?

    31:03-31:12

I think one of the big reasons that God ordained preaching is because it causes us to slow down, absorb what did God say?

    31:12-31:15

Let's slow down for a minute, people, and look at what God said.

    31:15-31:17

Let's just not read through it quickly.

    31:17-31:18

    Slow down.

    31:18-31:19

    What did he say?

    31:19-31:20

    Preaching lets us do that.

    31:22-31:31

Preaching lets us say, let's take a minute and look at what it says and let's take a minute and consider how we can reflect this truth in our life.

    31:32-31:33

That's why we do expository preaching.

    31:39-31:50

So my friends, if you wanna, if you wanna prosper in life, I mean, if you want a life where you're like, I am really prospering, you know the Bible tells you exactly how to do that.

    31:51-31:52

Prosper in God's eyes, that is.

    31:55-31:56

He says it twice in the Old Testament.

    31:57-32:11

He told Joshua in Joshua 1.8, "This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.

    32:11-32:16

For then you will make your way." There it is, prosperous.

    32:18-32:20

And then you have good success.

    32:21-32:22

And you might be like, oh, okay.

    32:22-32:24

And I was like, directed at Joshua.

    32:25-32:27

Like, is that really for everybody?

    32:28-32:29

    Yeah, it is.

    32:29-32:32

First Psalm says the same thing.

    32:33-32:36

Psalm one says, "His delight is in the law of the Lord.

    32:37-32:42

And on his law, he meditates day and night." Look at this.

    32:43-32:44

All that he does, he prospers.

    32:49-32:50

This is how renewing your mind works.

    32:50-32:52

You gotta meditate on the word.

    32:55-32:56

Hey, well, what is meditating, right?

    32:56-33:00

I sit down and I cross my legs and I do some kind of chant or something.

    33:00-33:01

No, no, that's not what that means.

    33:01-33:08

Actually, in the Hebrew, the word meditate has to do with cows.

    33:11-33:11

    What?

    33:13-33:15

You know, cows are ruminants, they have four stomachs.

    33:15-33:24

So when they eat, they swallow and then, they barf it back up in their mouth and they chew on it again.

    33:26-33:27

    That's what they do.

    33:30-33:32

That's the picture of biblical meditation.

    33:34-33:40

As you do that with the word of God, you take it in, but you're constantly chewing on it.

    33:41-33:43

You're constantly thinking, what does this verse say?

    33:43-33:44

    What does it mean?

    33:44-33:45

Why did God say it that way?

    33:46-33:47

Why did God word it that way?

    33:48-33:52

How can I reflect this truth in my marriage or when I go to work?

    33:53-33:54

Or how can I reflect this truth?

    33:55-33:57

Like, it's just chewing on it.

    33:57-33:58

    Why would God say that?

    33:58-33:59

    And what does that mean?

    33:59-34:00

    You're chewing on it.

    34:05-34:07

That's what God calls you to do with his word.

    34:08-34:12

Because listen, my friends, Somebody is telling you how to think.

    34:14-34:19

Somebody has your ear, but you have a choice.

    34:19-34:23

Are you gonna listen to the world or are you gonna listen to God?

    34:26-34:28

    So alter, get on it.

    34:28-34:30

    Bible, get in it.

    34:31-34:33

    C, choices, get making them.

    34:36-34:37

    Choices, get making them.

    34:39-34:40

Look at the end of verse two.

    34:42-34:56

He says, "You're gonna be transformed by the renewal of your mind." Look at this, "That by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

    34:58-35:11

By testing, you may discern the will of God." In other words, if you live this way on the altar and in the Bible, you will prove what the will of God is.

    35:15-35:15

    Just think about it.

    35:17-35:19

Speaking of logical, think about it.

    35:20-35:28

Only, only a living sacrifice is going to be willing to do whatever God says.

    35:31-35:36

But only a renewed mind can test and discern.

    35:36-35:38

    God's will.

    35:41-35:54

And Paul's point here is this, that kind of person, the person on the altar and in the Bible, that kind of person is going to make decisions that honor God.

    35:56-35:59

And this should be so freeing to us, church, because you know what this tells me?

    36:00-36:02

We don't gotta worry about a path.

    36:06-36:21

If you give yourself fully to God and you constantly fill your mind with his word, as a result, you're going to super naturally discern what he wants you to do.

    36:25-36:27

But you can't just jump to this part.

    36:29-36:32

You can't just jump to the, okay, what'd you learn in church today?

    36:33-36:34

Oh, pastor says I should make choices.

    36:35-36:36

You can't just jump to that.

    36:37-36:39

Get jumped to C without A and B.

    36:42-36:43

Because it won't work that way.

    36:44-36:44

    Like, what do you mean?

    36:44-36:45

    Here's what I mean.

    36:45-36:49

Many years ago, remember last week I told you about people that are like, "Islam's great.

    36:50-36:52

It's wonderful." There's one guy, he said he was a missionary.

    36:54-37:04

Many years ago, when I was in charge of the prison ministry up in Butler County, this man says, "I wanna go in with you to the prison." So we met this guy.

    37:05-37:08

over a breakfast smile at Eaton Park.

    37:09-37:20

We met this guy and he was going on and on about how wonderful Islam is, what a wonderful religion of peace it is, and how wonderful, wonderful Islam is.

    37:20-37:22

We talked about that last week.

    37:25-37:27

What I didn't tell you last week though, is I told the man, you know what?

    37:29-37:33

I don't think you're gonna be a good fit with my team that goes into the ministry.

    37:34-37:35

I just don't think you're gonna be a good fit.

    37:37-37:37

    Why?

    37:37-37:42

Well, you're teaching some things about a religion that does not confess Christ, as we talked about last week.

    37:43-37:45

We only teach what the Bible says.

    37:45-37:46

It's just not gonna be a good fit.

    37:48-37:49

    I'll never forget this.

    37:49-38:22

He said, "Fine, you just tell me what to say, "and I'll say that." And I said, "It doesn't work that way." I told him, "Listen, I want someone with a heart to preach the word of God, not somebody with a mouth that can just regurgitate a script." My friends, that's how it is with God.

    38:24-38:28

God doesn't give you some script to carry out His will.

    38:30-38:32

He wants your heart and your mind.

    38:33-38:38

And when he has those, you will do his will.

    38:39-38:42

    It's just gonna happen.

    38:45-38:46

    Amen. Can you be specific?

    38:48-38:49

    Well, God gets very specific.

    38:50-38:51

    You can trace this through.

    38:53-38:56

The Bible says in the New Testament, this is the will of God.

    38:57-38:59

And I'm gonna go through this very quickly, actually.

    38:59-39:01

We do this in Fundamentals of the Faith.

    39:01-39:02

We do a whole lesson on this.

    39:02-39:08

So next time Fundamentals of the Faith is offered, signed up, I'll tell you the whole thing, but this is the ultra short version.

    39:09-39:13

You trace through the New Testament when it says God's will, God's will.

    39:14-39:15

    Here's what it says.

    39:16-39:17

    Letter A, it's God's will that I'm saved.

    39:18-39:19

    1 Timothy 2.

    39:19-39:24

It is letter B, God's will that I am filled with the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 5.

    39:26-39:28

It is God's will that I am morally pure.

    39:30-39:37

1 Thessalonians 4, "It is God's will that I submit to the government." 1 Peter 2, we explained what that means.

    39:39-39:57

Letter E, "Sometimes it is God's will that I suffer." 1 Peter 4, and letter F, "It is God's will that I'm thankful in all circumstances." And you look at that list, and there it is again, Right there.

    39:58-40:00

God's will is not about a specific path.

    40:04-40:09

God's will is about the kind of person that he calls you to be.

    40:13-40:15

So if you're like, man, what does God want me to do?

    40:17-40:20

Jeff, can you tell me what is God's will for me?

    40:20-40:25

Yes, I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt what God's will is for you.

    40:28-40:29

He wants you to know Him.

    40:33-40:36

He wants you to give yourself to Him.

    40:38-40:42

He wants you to allow His word to saturate your brain and your heart.

    40:44-40:50

You do that, you'll know what God wants you to do.

    40:51-40:52

You bow your heads with me, please.

    40:55-41:08

Our Father in heaven, as your people, we want nothing more than to do your will.

    41:11-41:17

Sometimes, Father, we confess to you we get a little goofy about that.

    41:22-41:35

But Father, I'm asking that we take a hard look at your Word, because you haven't given some secret path that we're trying to figure out.

    41:36-41:38

You've told us the kind of person you call us to be.

    41:42-41:43

    So Father, I pray.

    41:45-41:57

I pray once again, Father, we would recommit ourselves to being living sacrifices, wholly committed to you on the altar, all that I am, all that I have, it's all yours.

    42:00-42:02

Father, let us change the way we see ourselves.

    42:05-42:11

Father, I pray that we would allow your word to renew our minds.

    42:14-42:27

There's so much, so much garbage that's being floated out there that we're supposed to think the way the world wants us to think, but you've told us no.

    42:28-42:30

No, don't be conformed to that.

    42:31-42:33

Father, let your Word transform us.

    42:38-42:56

Father, we thank you that what you desire from us isn't following some script, but you want a relationship, and you've provided that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

    42:57-43:00

It's in his name that we pray, amen.
