Before I start, I just really wanted to thank everyone for letting me preach again because I'm surprised every time they ask me to come back and speak, I'm always like, "Oh, okay." But I was thinking about this a lot last night.

    00:11-00:11

    Thank you.

    00:12-00:28

Just being at seminary and just like studying all the time and being in class, I just get so up in my head sometimes with the Bible and preaching and it really does help me just to be able to come back and just be reminded that the reason I'm being trained is to minister to the church and to preach the Word of God.

    00:29-00:32

So I really do appreciate Jeff and the leadership team for asking me to come back.

    00:32-00:33

It really means a lot to me.

    00:35-00:37

So last summer, I had a really hard time finding a job.

    00:37-00:39

I was applying to all these different places.

    00:40-00:41

And I was getting really frustrated.

    00:41-00:42

I mean, I didn't want to go back to Walmart.

    00:43-00:43

    That was my one goal.

    00:43-00:45

I was like, I don't have to go back to Walmart, then I'll be fine.

    00:46-00:50

And so one day I get this magical letter in the mail and I see it's from this company called Vector.

    00:51-00:52

    I'm like, oh, Vector Security.

    00:52-00:53

I mean, I wonder what this is about.

    00:54-00:57

So I open it up and it's pretty much like this job offer pretty much.

    00:57-01:00

They want me to come in and interview and they have a number right there.

    01:00-01:02

And the pay looked really good and it seemed like too good to be true.

    01:03-01:04

I don't want to give away the end of the story.

    01:06-01:09

So I called the number and the lady's like, "Oh yeah, well, we're actually having an interview in a couple of hours.

    01:09-01:14

Why don't you just come in and we'll see how it goes?" I'm like, "Okay." So I update my resume.

    01:14-01:17

I put on my nicest suit jacket, nicest tie.

    01:17-01:22

So I drive to the building where the interview is supposed to be.

    01:22-01:24

And I get there and I walk up to the front door.

    01:24-01:34

And the first sign this probably isn't gonna be the way I thought it was gonna be was that there's like a Wrinkled piece of paper taped to the front door and it said vector sales. I was like, oh no What's this gonna be about?

    01:35-01:54

So I walk upstairs and I go into this room and it's filled with like 15 guys who look and are dressed exactly like me And I was like, yeah, I'm not gonna get this job And so I also look around and I realized that this is really a cutco Sales team. I see that the Cutco knife is on the desk. I see like a TV that says Cutco on it.

    01:55-01:58

It looks like one of those offices that can be packed up in three minutes just in case anything happens.

    01:59-02:02

And like there was like a sword in the corner. I was like, I don't know why that's there, but okay.

    02:02-02:08

And all those like, you know, motivational posters, like encouragement. It has a picture of like, you know, like two deer like running around or something.

    02:10-02:14

And I got so upset. I got so angry. I'm like, this is not what they said it was gonna be.

    02:14-02:16

And so I actually just like walked right out of the room.

    02:16-02:21

I think I actually took off my tie and threw it in the car and I ripped my resume in half because I was so upset.

    02:22-02:30

But I think, on a more serious note, I think all of us can relate to that, that we've all looked forward to something and eagerly expected something only to be let down, right?

    02:30-02:32

Am I the only person who's ever had that happen to?

    02:33-02:40

You daydream about this certain day or event and then when it comes, it leaves you unsatisfied with what it's really like.

    02:41-02:49

Maybe for you, it was Christmas this year, like, you know, for months and months, you You were just eagerly expecting Christmas to be the best you've ever had, but then it came and it disappointed you.

    02:50-02:57

Maybe for you it was like for me, like you wanted, you go to this interview for this dream job you've always wanted and you don't get it.

    02:58-03:01

And you're setting all your hopes and all your expectations on it and you don't know what you're going to do next.

    03:02-03:10

See, I think whether we realize it or not, we are people of intense anticipation and expectation who are looking for something to satisfy us and bring us fulfillment.

    03:11-03:14

I think if we just look over the course of our lives, we can see this is true.

    03:15-03:18

Life just seems to be a series of anticipation and letdown.

    03:19-03:28

Like, you know, you're in elementary school when you just look at all the middle school kids, like, "Oh, they're so cool. I can't wait to get there." And you get there, and you're going through puberty and everything, and you're like, "Oh, this is terrible. I just can't wait to get to high school.

    03:28-03:36

They're so awesome there." And you get to high school, and that gets really boring, and you just want to graduate, get away from your parents, and move on to college or whatever else you're going to do.

    03:36-03:38

Then you get to college, "I just can't wait to graduate.

    03:38-03:42

to find that person I'm going to marry, you know, ring by spring, that kind of stuff.

    03:42-03:45

And you find that person you're going to marry and then you move on to the next stage, kids.

    03:46-03:49

And then parents, what happens when the stress of parenthood hits?

    03:49-03:50

I can't wait till my kids move out of the house.

    03:51-03:52

I can't wait till I can finally be alone with my spouse again.

    03:53-03:56

The kids finally move out, your dreams come true, and there's still something missing.

    03:57-03:59

And then you realize, you know, work's always been stressful.

    03:59-04:00

I can't wait to finally retire.

    04:01-04:07

And then retirement comes and you still have this nagging feeling of anticipation and longing for something else.

    04:08-04:11

And you don't know what else to even look at, you don't even know what else to go after.

    04:12-04:21

See, I think life just seems like an endless cycle, an endless treadmill of looking after, going after that next stage which will magically bring us fulfillment, all that we've been longing for.

    04:23-04:25

But we're always constantly let down, right?

    04:27-04:32

See, I think the sense of longing anticipation has been hardwired within each and every one of us by God himself.

    04:33-04:38

And its fulfillment can only be found in Jesus Christ and the future hope he's going to bring.

    04:39-04:46

So we're so used to being disappointed and let down, and we always constantly look to the next thing as if it's going to be different and will provide us with something more.

    04:48-04:56

But hear me, there's only one thing that won't disappoint you or let you down, and that is the future that Christ will bring upon his second coming.

    04:57-05:00

So today we're entering into a new year in a couple days.

    05:01-05:12

And I want this to be a year for you that is marked by anticipation and longing for the next fad or the next stage of life, but for the future, new heaven and new earth which God will bring.

    05:13-05:19

So today we're going to dive into Revelation 21, 1-8 to discover the amazing future we have to look forward to.

    05:20-05:26

And I pray that it will move us closer to Jesus Christ and towards obedience to the mission of spreading the gospel He's entrusted to us.

    05:27-05:31

So we're just going to read the text. If you could just stand in reverence for God's word as we read the text.

    05:32-05:33

    It's Revelation 21, 1 through 8.

    05:40-05:54

The Apostle John writes, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

    05:56-06:00

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

    06:00-06:06

"He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, "and God himself will be with them as their God.

    06:07-06:11

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, "and death shall be no more.

    06:12-06:22

"There shall be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, "for the former things have passed away." And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new.

    06:23-06:28

"Also," he said, "write this down, "for these words are trustworthy and true." And he said to me, "It is done.

    06:28-06:31

"I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

    06:32-06:35

"To the thirsty, I will give from the spring of water "of life without payment.

    06:36-06:41

"The one who conquers will have this heritage, "and I will be his God, and he will be my son.

    06:41-06:56

"But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, "as for murderers, the sexually immoral, "sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, "Their portion will be in the lake of fire, "which burns with fire and sulfur, "which is the second death." Will you pray with me?

    06:57-07:02

God, we thank you so much for this, we thank you so much for your word, we thank you so much for this passage and all that it means to us.

    07:02-07:05

We thank you for the future hope that we have to look forward to.

    07:05-07:12

God, I pray you just hide me behind your cross, and I pray this wouldn't be about me, but it'd be about demonstrating your glory, Lord, and impacting people with your word.

    07:13-07:15

I thank you so much for all that you're about to do.

    07:16-07:18

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

    07:19-07:19

    You can be seated.

    07:21-07:25

See, I think if we're honest with ourselves, we really don't anticipate heaven.

    07:25-07:28

We really don't anticipate the future that God has in store for us.

    07:29-07:31

I think the reason is, it sounds boring, right?

    07:31-07:34

A lot of times the way the church presents, it just sounds really boring.

    07:34-07:36

Like we're gonna sit on clouds and pluck harps.

    07:36-07:38

Like I was looking at this cartoon the other day.

    07:39-07:40

Isn't that what we kind of think?

    07:41-07:44

Like it just seems like, okay, that's it?

    07:45-07:49

Or a lot of people are just like, well, we're just gonna sing and sing and sing for millions of years.

    07:49-07:55

Hey, I think new heaven, new earth is gonna be a lot of worshiping God, a lot of singing, but is that really all we're gonna do?

    07:55-07:56

    Is that really it?

    07:57-08:01

And you all think to yourselves, I think if we are really honest, it sounds boring.

    08:03-08:09

And you hear some guys say, you know what, I'd just rather go to hell and be with my buddies, we'll just play cards and drink beer and that kind of stuff.

    08:10-08:11

It's so much better than what heaven's gonna be like.

    08:11-08:12

And that's so not true, right?

    08:13-08:16

That's so not what God's word shows us.

    08:16-08:20

God's future for us in the new heavens and new earth is beyond our wildest expectations.

    08:20-08:22

    It's even beyond words.

    08:24-08:26

And it's not going to disappoint us or bore us at all.

    08:27-08:32

See, I think Satan will do anything to make this future eternity with God seem boring and not something to look forward to.

    08:33-08:37

Because he knows if you look forward to it, anticipate it, that will change how you live right now.

    08:38-08:42

Satan also wants us to get caught up in the controversial details of the second coming.

    08:42-08:44

All the charts and all the timing, all the end time prophecies.

    08:44-08:46

And that's not what I'm going to be doing here today.

    08:47-08:51

And I know whenever we get into end time stuff, I'm going to say things you're probably not going to agree with.

    08:52-08:53

I'm probably not going to agree with certain things you believe.

    08:53-08:54

    And that's okay, right?

    08:55-08:59

As long as we believe that Jesus is coming back, and we have this awesome future hope to look forward to.

    08:59-09:01

We can disagree about some of the details, right?

    09:02-09:02

    Amen?

    09:04-09:09

So I just want to silence the lies the enemy whispers into our ears about heaven.

    09:09-09:14

I want the word of God to speak for itself about what it says about the new heaven and new earth.

    09:16-09:21

I truly believe that the picture that Revelation 21 provides us with can transform how we live right now.

    09:24-09:25

So let's start with the passage.

    09:27-09:34

So John is given a vision by the Lord as he sees the future, and he starts out with saying then.

    09:34-09:37

So we have to stop right there and say, okay, well, what happened before the then?

    09:38-09:49

Well, chapter 21 is preceded by Christ's triumphal return to earth, where he returns as a victorious king who defeats all of his enemies and those who are in rebellion against him.

    09:49-09:57

And every single person in human history is taken before the judgment seat to receive his or her ultimate and final sentence, guilty or innocent.

    09:58-10:04

And those who place their faith and trust in Jesus Christ will experience the glorious future we're about to study out in Revelation 21.

    10:06-10:20

And for those who rejected the gospel and continually rebelled against Jesus Christ, they will be sadly cast into hell forever to receive punishment for their sins, which is eternal separation from God Himself, the source of joy and the source of all life.

    10:21-10:21

    So please hear me today.

    10:21-10:24

There is a judgment day coming for each and every one of us.

    10:25-10:28

I've heard some people say, "Well, yeah, I'll just figure that out when I get there.

    10:28-11:06

You know, I'll just take God aside when I get to the judgment and just be like, 'Hey, I'll just tell Him what's going on and He'll understand my point of view.'" a very bad plan. There has to be a punishment for your sins. There just has to be. We have offended a holy and perfect God and He cannot deal with our sin. Either the judgment has to be poured out upon us in hell forever or upon Jesus Christ on the cross. There are no other options. So today, if you're still on the fence about Jesus Christ, I pray that you would repent of your sins, turn your back on your sins and turn to Jesus Christ and and believe in him so you can be saved and experience this hope we're going to talk about.

    11:10-11:15

So I think this passage, so there's four different aspects of the new heaven and new earth to expect.

    11:15-11:17

So first of all, what are we to expect?

    11:18-11:20

Number one, restoration of all things.

    11:22-11:36

John writes of this vision, "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth "for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away "and the sea was no more." See, as I was studying out this passage, I came to my own conclusions.

    11:36-11:44

You may disagree about the conclusion I come to, but I think it's, in my opinion, it's the most faithful to Scripture.

    11:45-11:53

So I think whenever John says that the old earth, the old heaven will pass away, he does not mean that it will be destroyed and utterly annihilated.

    11:53-12:00

He's saying there's going to be such a radical change that the current broken condition of this world will pass away.

    12:01-12:05

The word new in this passage is the Greek word kynos, which doesn't mean brand new.

    12:05-12:10

It means something so utterly transformed to its core that it appears to be brand new.

    12:12-12:14

And I was reading through several commentaries getting ready for this sermon.

    12:15-12:22

I read one pastor describing it as a caterpillar who cocoons itself, and then one day it transforms into a beautiful butterfly.

    12:22-12:26

It goes from its old state into a new state.

    12:26-12:30

There's a sense which the caterpillar passes away, but it's going into a new state.

    12:31-12:36

It's not brand new, but it's so radical in its change, it's utterly transformed that it appears to be brand new.

    12:37-12:47

In the same way, this current world, the order, will pass away, and a new godly world will be ushered in that is devoid of sin and the destruction that comes with it.

    12:49-12:53

And you see this line right here, it says the sea was no more, and you're like, that's kind of random, why would they even write that?

    12:53-12:58

And you're like, I really love going to the ocean, I love fishing, that kind of stinks.

    12:59-13:09

But, as I was reading different commentaries, most theologians, most scholars believe that this is not a literal, there's no more bodies of water in heaven, just complete, just complete ain't land.

    13:10-13:10

    That's not what they believe.

    13:11-13:16

This is a symbolic metaphor for destruction and chaos that sin brings.

    13:17-13:24

So what John is saying that in this new future, sin is completely done away with as long as it's devastating and destructive effects.

    13:27-13:29

as God completely remakes his creation.

    13:31-13:42

I think this is similar to a beautiful house being built by a master builder, and everything about this house is completely perfect, down from the foundation of the house to the shingles on the roof.

    13:43-13:51

And he decides to rent out this beautiful, gorgeous house to these tenants, who end up completely just neglecting the house and even ruining it.

    13:51-13:57

And after years and years of the tenants living there, They finally move out and the builder returns to the house.

    13:58-14:01

He barely even recognizes his greatest creation.

    14:02-14:15

His family and friends tell him to gut the house and completely start over, but he decides to instead renovate the house and completely restore it to its former beauty and even make some extra additions to make it better.

    14:16-14:28

I think in the same way, God will completely restore the brokenness and dilapidation of of this world and bring beauty out of this ugliness instead of gutting it and just completely starting over.

    14:29-14:30

Now you may be thinking, why does it really matter?

    14:31-14:35

I mean, how's it being brand new compared to being transformed really make a difference in the end?

    14:37-14:44

Well, I think it's important because I think you treat and steward something differently when you know it's gonna be restored and not destroyed.

    14:45-14:46

    Let me say that again.

    14:46-14:52

You will treat and steward something differently when you know it's gonna be restored instead of destroyed.

    14:53-15:04

Guys in the room, if your dad had this beautiful classic car and he said, "Hey son, I want you to take care of this "for the next couple of weeks, 'cause in a couple of weeks, "I'm gonna take this thing to the junkyard "and smash it into a tiny cube." Would you really wanna take care of that car?

    15:04-15:07

You know, you'd be doing donuts in the Wendy's parking lot, you'd be smashing it into walls and walls.

    15:07-15:08

You don't really care how you treated it, right?

    15:08-15:16

And if your dad says, "Son, I want you to take care "of this car because in a couple of weeks, "I'm gonna completely restore it "and make it like it's brand new." That would motivate you.

    15:17-15:20

That would drive you to be faithful with what he's entrusted to you.

    15:21-15:24

In the same way, God has entrusted to us the care of his creation.

    15:25-15:31

And we should take this responsibility seriously because one day he will return to restore everything that's been damaged by sin.

    15:32-15:42

See, God also promises elsewhere in scripture that our bodies will be resurrected and made new in the same way the earth will be made new.

    15:42-15:44

They will be completely restored and renewed.

    15:45-15:54

So please hear me, don't buy into the lie that our eternity as Christians is about being snatched away into some spiritual realm while God has completely obliterates all that is physical.

    15:56-16:04

I want to read 1 Corinthians 15, 51 to 55 to talk about the resurrection of our bodies and I think it will really illustrate this point.

    16:05-16:07

Paul writes, "Behold, I tell you a mystery.

    16:07-16:11

We shall not all sleep, but we all shall be changed.

    16:12-16:53

In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet will sound dead will raise imperishable and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, 'Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?' See, if God just opted out to go straight spiritual instead of physical because of the fall, then if you think about it, in a sense, Satan kind of won, and Christ's defeat of sin and Satan upon the cross wasn't really full.

    16:54-17:01

If God had to scrap his plans of a physical earth with physical people because of Satan, then that makes God look lame and powerless, right?

    17:02-17:04

It wasn't like God's like, "Oh man, Satan really got the best of me here.

    17:05-17:07

Well, what am I gonna do now?

    17:07-17:19

Well, I guess I'll just go straight spirit, no more earth, that's done, just destroy it." No, our hope is that Jesus Christ fully defeated death and Satan upon the cross.

    17:19-17:26

And one day God will fulfill his original plan of having a physical people ruling over a physical earth in his presence.

    17:26-17:27

That's what we have to look forward to.

    17:29-17:35

And our anticipation of this day should cause us to steward our bodies well and to not mistreat them.

    17:37-17:43

See, one day death will no longer be victorious as it is swallowed up in life that Christ will bring.

    17:44-17:47

See now, upon our deaths, our souls will go to be with the Lord in heaven.

    17:48-17:52

This is called, what theologians call, the intermediate state, the in-between state, or the middle state.

    17:53-17:56

But this isn't the final goal, this isn't the final state.

    17:56-18:05

Upon Christ's return, our souls will be united with our glorified and resurrected bodies as heaven and earth become one and we will dwell with God forever.

    18:06-18:11

So many Christians mix up the intermediate state and the final state.

    18:11-18:13

And it's such an important distinction.

    18:14-18:20

And our anticipation for restored earth and restored bodies should drive us to be faithful now.

    18:21-18:23

How we steward them and take care of them.

    18:24-18:33

Polluting and exploiting our planet and mistreating our bodies, not taking care of them is an offense to God and disrespectful to the stewardship he has entrusted to us.

    18:35-18:36

So what are we to expect?

    18:37-18:39

    First, restoration of all things.

    18:40-18:41

    Second, nearness to God.

    18:44-18:53

John writes in the second verse, I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepares a bride adorned for her husband.

    18:53-18:57

I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, behold, the dwelling place of God is with man.

    18:58-19:04

He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

    19:05-19:09

See, later on in the chapter, John gives the exact dimensions of this new city.

    19:10-19:14

And many scholars debate if this is the exact dimensions of the city, if it's metaphorical.

    19:14-19:18

Maybe the city's the bride of Christ, people who have died are coming down to heaven.

    19:19-19:20

I don't want to talk about that.

    19:20-19:25

But what I do want to talk about is the most important part of this passage is the symbolism behind it.

    19:27-19:30

See, if you take the exact measurements of New Jerusalem, it's a perfect cube.

    19:31-19:41

And you're like, "Okay, that's...why is that a big deal?" Well, the Holy of Holies and the tabernacle and the temple after it was in the shape of a perfect cube.

    19:42-19:46

And that was where God would specially manifest himself and dwell amongst his people.

    19:47-19:52

That's where the chief priest, the high priest would go in every year on the Day of Atonement to make a special sacrifice for sin.

    19:53-20:17

So what John is trying to show us here is that one day, all of the new creation will be God's Holy of Holies, God's temple, God's dwelling place where he will live in and amongst his people perfectly. This is what all of the Bible, this is what all of redemptive history has been moving towards. This is why Jesus came, so we could have a renewed earth filled with restored people and a perfect fellowship with their God.

    20:19-20:32

See, the separation between God and man was bridged by the cross of Christ and his resurrection, but finally and fully on this day, we will have unhindered relationship with God as heaven and earth join together and become one.

    20:34-20:38

I don't know about you, but I have moments where I feel disconnected from God and He seems distant.

    20:39-20:42

Days where I pray and it seems like my prayers don't even leave the room.

    20:43-20:44

But we're not always going to feel that way.

    20:44-20:52

One day, we'll have a perfect face-to-face relationship with our God that is devoid of sin and the shame that comes with it.

    20:52-21:00

I really can't wait until the day where I no longer have sin in my life and it gets in the way of my communion and my fellowship with God on a daily basis.

    21:02-21:04

See, isn't this what the whole Bible is about?

    21:05-21:10

Not us ascending to God, not about us going up to heaven, but in this passage, new Jerusalem comes down to us.

    21:11-21:16

That God humbly and mercifully and graciously comes down to save lost and broken people.

    21:16-21:19

Isn't this an awesome picture of what salvation really is?

    21:19-21:22

God coming down to his people, coming down to his creation to save it.

    21:24-21:36

The greatest blessing and joy of our future won't be our glorified bodies, which will be amazing and fantastic, nor our renewed earth, which will be flawless, but that we will dwell with our God in perfect union and community.

    21:37-21:50

See for the first two weeks of this series, Jeff was talking about Jesus' first coming, how Matthew, whose name was Emmanuel, which means God with us, and finally that idea will be completely fulfilled, that God will be with us.

    21:54-22:02

writes in one of my favorite verses in all the Bible, later in chapter 22, verse four, that they, believers, will see his face.

    22:03-22:05

    We'll see Jesus' face.

    22:05-22:12

Just imagine after years and years of praying to him and reading your Bibles about him, coming face to face with your Lord and Savior.

    22:13-22:19

Let us live for that day when our faith will finally become sight, our hopes and dreams will finally become reality.

    22:19-22:29

As we look into the face of our Savior and our God, He looks back at us, we will see all that we were searching so frantically for in this life, which was a relationship with God Himself.

    22:32-22:39

At the moment, at that moment we will realize that all that we sacrificed for Him was not even a sacrifice at all.

    22:39-22:43

It was just trading in worthless garbage for the ultimate treasure of knowing Jesus Christ.

    22:46-22:52

I think this is so key because nothing is more important in life-giving in a relationship than personal face-to-face time.

    22:53-22:56

So over the past four months, while I was in Louisville, I say Louisville, people make fun of me for that.

    22:57-23:00

But once I go down there and say Louisville, they make fun of me, so I lose-lose either way.

    23:00-23:07

I go down there and say Louisville, they're like, "Oh, Louisville." Then I come up here and Louisville, but whatever, I'm just gonna say Louisville, 'cause I'm not ashamed.

    23:09-23:13

See, nothing is more important in life-giving and a relationship than having face-to-face time.

    23:13-23:15

I'm sorry, kiddo, I'm about to embarrass you.

    23:15-23:16

She doesn't like my user and illustrations.

    23:18-23:30

So over the past four months while I was in Louisville for seminary, Kate was still here finishing up college and we had to communicate a lot over FaceTime and Skype, not Skype, I don't know why I said Skype, FaceTime, texting, phone calls.

    23:31-23:37

And see, while I liked talking to her over those times, I got really sick and tired of talking to her over a screen.

    23:37-23:38

I wanted to see her face to face.

    23:39-23:46

Even though I saw her several times throughout the semester, I couldn't wait until the day when I was finally able to come back home for a month and a half and just see her and to talk to her and be with her face to face.

    23:47-23:59

In the same way, I love speaking to the Lord in prayer and encountering him in his word, but there's coming a day when my faith will become sight and I will see him face to face and we will be together physically in that way.

    24:00-24:01

Isn't that what we're all hoping for?

    24:01-24:02

Isn't that what we're all longing for?

    24:02-24:04

Can you even imagine that day?

    24:07-24:16

See, I know prayer in this life can be frustrating at times and it seems pointless, but I urge all of us to let 2014 be a year of fervent prayer and utter dependence upon the Lord.

    24:17-24:28

'Cause this future reality of a physical face-to-face relationship with our God and Father should motivate us to communicate with God on a daily basis now so we can deepen our relationship with Him.

    24:30-24:35

It wasn't like I was down at seminary and thinking, you know what, I'll see Kate in four months from now.

    24:35-24:38

I'm just not gonna talk to her at all over FaceTime and phone calls.

    24:38-24:40

We're just gonna completely ignore each other for four months.

    24:40-24:49

No, we used phone calls, we used FaceTime, we used all those things that were available to us to deepen our relationship now, so our face-to-face time would be better later.

    24:50-25:00

In the same way, God has given us prayer to deepen our relationship with Him now, and to communicate with Him, and one day prayer will transform into a face-to-face relationship.

    25:01-25:05

So please do not neglect growing closer to the Lord in prayer this year.

    25:05-25:07

It is so vital, it is so key.

    25:07-25:09

Pray in light of that day.

    25:11-25:46

So what to expect? First, restoration of all things. Second, nearness to God. Third, freedom from suffering and death. John writes in verse 4, God is saying this from the throne, "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes and death shall be no more. Neither shall "be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, "for the former things have passed away." Imagine a world where every injustice is righted, every sad thing becomes untrue, and pain no longer exists.

    25:46-25:54

The new creation will be free from any and all forms of bodily, physical, mental, and spiritual pain and suffering.

    25:55-26:04

John even writes in Revelation 20, 14, that death itself will be thrown into hell, never to be seen again, because death is the enemy but it'll be thrown into the lake of fire one day.

    26:05-26:08

So we will no longer be attending any more funerals in the new heavens and new earth.

    26:08-26:12

Can I get an amen for that? No more funerals. No more death. None of that.

    26:13-26:19

Just imagine it. No more aches. No more pains. No more cancer and disease, which ravages so many of our loved ones.

    26:19-26:25

No more abortions of millions of millions of children. No more genocide. No more hatred. No more murder. No more lying.

    26:25-26:27

All of that will be gone forever.

    26:29-26:36

It's even hard to imagine, isn't it? It's hard to imagine a world like that with. We're just constantly bombarded with hatred and death and suffering.

    26:37-26:39

But one day all this will come to an end.

    26:41-26:45

See on another note, we all struggle through relational stresses in our family and friends, right?

    26:46-26:51

Some of you experienced this harsh reality at Christmas this year as arguments filled your home.

    26:51-26:53

Tension and anger filled your home.

    26:54-27:03

As old arguments resurfaced, old wounds were reopened, for some of us, for some of you, it feels like your family will always be broken and wholeness will never occur.

    27:05-27:18

But there's coming a day as this passage shows that there will be no more family strife, there'll be no more arguments that we will have a perfect relationship as the family of God without angerness, without bitterness, without hatred and miscommunication.

    27:20-27:27

So maybe for you this year, first Christmas, without that loved one who passed away this year, their family member, that friend, and you've had a hard time making it through the holidays.

    27:28-27:36

As we talked about, a day is coming when death will no longer exist, and it'll no longer be something we have to worry about, or think about, or deal with.

    27:38-27:41

See, I know in a room this size, there are many going through the darkest valleys imaginable.

    27:42-27:45

And at times, it seems as if you won't make it, or you can't go on.

    27:46-27:55

I hope that you'll find comfort in this passage, that one day all your pains will pass away, and God himself will wipe away the tears from your eyes.

    27:56-28:03

This season of suffering and trial will not last and will one day give way to eternal and everlasting joy.

    28:04-28:25

Paul writes in Romans 8, 18, "I consider that the sufferings of this present time "are not worth comparing with the glory "that is to be revealed in us." This was a man who was beaten, mocked, shipwrecked, and imprisoned, and he says, All these things that are happening to me are so momentary, not even worth comparing with all the things that God has prepared for me.

    28:27-28:28

So please don't lose hope in your situation.

    28:29-28:30

    Instead, anticipate this day.

    28:31-28:37

Have this outlook, that the hardships of this life are nothing compared to what Jesus Christ has in store for us.

    28:38-28:43

Only this perspective will allow you to have joy and life in the present, in the midst of trial.

    28:43-28:44

    Nothing else will help.

    28:45-28:47

    No self-help, no medications, nothing.

    28:48-28:51

Only this will give you the hope to make it through your storms of life.

    28:54-28:55

    So what to expect?

    28:56-29:09

First, restoration of all things. Second, nearness to God. Third, freedom from suffering and death. And fourth, eternal satisfaction for believers and eternal punishment for non-believers.

    29:11-29:18

Verse five says, And he was seated on the throne and said, "Behold, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this down.

    29:18-29:27

"These words are trustworthy and true." So as followers of Christ, there should be no controversy surrounding the reality of the future coming of Christ.

    29:27-29:34

We may disagree about the details and the timing, but we can all rally around the word of God that Jesus Christ is returning.

    29:34-29:40

We can all rally around the truth that he will bring restoration and hope for all who are in him.

    29:41-29:44

Everything else is just not that important in light of that.

    29:46-29:49

So John writes that first and foremost, these words are trustworthy.

    29:49-29:53

They can bear the weights of all of our hopes and expectations.

    29:53-30:04

Everything else in this life crumbles under the enormity of our anticipation and longings for fulfillment, and we're always let down when we look to other things for what Jesus Christ can provide.

    30:05-30:10

Sex, money, people, spouses, success, they all crumble under our expectations.

    30:12-30:14

We always end up disappointed, don't we?

    30:16-30:18

    Also these words are true.

    30:19-30:23

They cannot be doubted in their honesty and their truthfulness.

    30:24-30:35

Yes, the world around us and even ourselves at times might think that they're not true and that there's religious nonsense, but there will come a day, as this word says, where no one will doubt their truthfulness, right?

    30:35-30:40

Everyone will see face to face that this word and its promises are true.

    30:40-30:45

On that day, no one will be able to mock us, make fun of us, put us down anymore, or persecute us.

    30:45-30:50

Everyone will bow their knee to Jesus Christ and know that what He said was true.

    30:52-31:00

So if you feel like everything else is falling apart around you and you can trust no one and look to nothing, trust in God and His word.

    31:01-31:06

I know sometimes God seems anything but trustworthy, but He is always working for your good.

    31:06-31:09

His word and His promises are true and you can trust in them.

    31:09-31:13

It can hold all the weight of your expectations in this life.

    31:17-31:18

God continues to say, "It is done.

    31:19-31:19

    It is accomplished.

    31:20-31:23

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.

    31:23-31:32

To the thirsty I will give from the spring of water of life without payment." So God says, "I am the Alpha and the Omega." This is the first and last letter of the Greek alphabet.

    31:32-31:34

    It's like God saying, "I am A to Z.

    31:34-31:37

I am the one who created this universe out of nothing.

    31:37-31:38

    I spoke it into existence.

    31:38-31:42

I'm the one who's currently sustaining it, and I will bring the end to pass.

    31:42-31:44

I am the beginning and the end.

    31:45-31:52

God is in a way laying out his credentials in a way to prove that he is able to keep his promises and that these words are trustworthy and true.

    31:54-32:05

If I told you this year that all your hopes and dreams would come to pass, all your resolutions would be accomplished because I would make them happen, you'd be like, how can you do that?

    32:05-32:07

Taylor, tell me how you can do that.

    32:07-32:09

I would say, "Oh, please don't worry.

    32:09-32:16

"I'm Taylor, a seminary student." Okay, you wouldn't trust that I'd be able to make that promise happen.

    32:16-32:17

    I wouldn't keep my promise.

    32:18-32:25

But we can trust God and His word, that He will do what He says He's going to do, because He is the creator and sustainer of all things.

    32:26-32:28

He can make the impossible possible, right?

    32:29-32:30

And we can always trust Him.

    32:30-32:31

    He can do anything.

    32:31-32:34

There is nothing He cannot do.

    32:37-32:44

He says to the thirsty, those who long for something, those who desire fulfillment, I will give from the spring of water of life without payment.

    32:45-32:50

This water is a symbol for satisfaction of desire and longing that we all have.

    32:51-32:54

Only God can provide the true fulfillment that we all need.

    32:55-33:01

He also promises that we will receive this satisfaction without payment because Jesus Christ paid for it on the cross.

    33:02-33:04

We cannot earn this or work our way towards it.

    33:04-33:08

But we can only freely receive it as a gift in Jesus Christ.

    33:12-33:15

John goes on to say, "The one who conquers will have this heritage.

    33:16-33:34

God says, 'I will be his God, and he will be my son.' But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns the fire and sulfur, which is the second death.

    33:36-33:44

So John writes that those who conquer or have a life that is marked by obedience will experience this new heaven and new earth and they will dwell with God forever.

    33:45-33:52

See, he's not saying that our actions or our deeds save us, but he's saying that our actions and our deeds reveal our heart.

    33:53-34:01

As Jesus once said, "Out of the overflow of our heart, out of the abundance of our heart, the mouth speaks." A good tree produces good fruit.

    34:02-34:04

A bad tree produces bad fruit.

    34:04-34:07

So in the same way, our actions reveal the true state of our heart.

    34:08-34:22

But as verse eight shows, a life that is marked by unrepentant sin and rebellion and resistance to God reveals that that person doesn't truly have a relationship with Christ and will spend forever away from him in hell.

    34:23-34:46

Now I really wanna be careful with this because we aren't called to be the salvation police, the salvation judges who walk around and say, "Well, that person's not saved. That person's saved." "That person, I mean, they cheated on their wife, they don't go to church, they're definitely not saved." "That guy, he reads his Bible every week, he goes to a small group, he goes to church every week, he must be saved." See, that's not our job. We cannot read people's hearts, we cannot judge people's hearts.

    34:46-34:47

    Only God can do that.

    34:49-34:55

And that brings so much destruction in the church when we try to judge people and say, "Oh, you're saved, you're not saved." That's only up to God.

    34:56-35:04

What I'm trying to show us here, that this passage is here to spur us on to obedience and faithfulness in this life.

    35:04-35:09

Because even the most mature Christian can find themselves in a season of rebellion and sin, right?

    35:09-35:10

    Am I the only one?

    35:12-35:48

God is trying to spur us on to be faithful to Him and to persevere through hardship by reminding us that those who persevere, those who don't quit, are those who will experience this future hope. I believe this anticipation in the future leads to present obedience now. See, I've heard many people say that focusing upon the second return of Christ will only make Christians lazy in this life and will distract them from the mission of spreading the gospel. See, I agree to some point that if we get bogged down in the details and the charts and all those prophecies, then we will miss out on what we're supposed to to be focusing upon.

    35:49-35:58

But I believe that living in light of the return of Christ is the only fuel of the fire of our obedience that will actually last, that will actually endure.

    36:02-36:10

See, right now I'm eagerly anticipating the day of July 26th more than any other day in the past, and the day that's come before it, or any other day in the foreseeable future.

    36:10-36:12

Sorry, kid, I'm gonna embarrass you again.

    36:13-36:13

    Why?

    36:13-36:17

Because that's the day I get to marry my fiance, to marry my wife.

    36:18-36:24

And I can't wait for that day when Kate will walk down the aisle to me so we can start our new lives together.

    36:26-36:28

And it's 209 days away, no one's counting.

    36:32-36:39

But July 26th occupies a lot of my thoughts and I daydream about that day a lot and the life that will follow it.

    36:39-36:43

But in no way does that anticipation and that longing make me lazy in the here and now.

    36:44-36:45

I'm like, oh, I can't wait to get married to Kate.

    36:45-36:50

I'm just gonna lay down in this lounger and just sit down until this wedding's just gonna magically appear.

    36:52-37:00

No, anticipation for this day has caused Kate and I to pick a venue, a date, hire a caterer, all these different things.

    37:01-37:06

And it's also caused us to work even harder to develop our relationship and save money for our future.

    37:07-37:10

See, thinking about that day drives us harder to work, not to be lazy.

    37:11-37:22

See, living in light of my wedding day causes me to work hard in the present And in the same way, living in light of the future return of Christ should cause us to share the gospel and not be complacent in witnessing.

    37:22-37:25

Because we want as many people to experience this hope as possible, right?

    37:26-37:27

    I mean, this is true.

    37:28-37:34

That some people, most people, according to the Bible, because the Bible says that this way is narrow and most people don't find it.

    37:34-37:36

Most people are on the path of destruction.

    37:36-37:50

If we believe that most people are on a path that leads to an eternal and everlasting hell that is filled with conscious torment, forever away from God, then we should do whatever we can to witness and disciple people for Jesus Christ.

    37:51-37:52

    Nothing else is more important.

    37:52-37:57

Living in light of this future will transform how we witness, how we disciple in the present.

    37:59-38:06

Fear of rejection and being uncomfortable should be drowned out in our lives by a concern for those who are lost and without Christ.

    38:08-38:09

Because the stakes are just too high.

    38:11-38:15

Life is short, eternity is long, Christ is returning.

    38:17-38:19

Time is short and hell is for real.

    38:21-38:29

So in conclusion, I can't promise that 2014 will be a year of happiness, health, fulfilled dreams, and accomplished resolutions.

    38:31-38:43

But I can promise you with absolute certainty that 2014 can be a year that is marked by radical obedience to Jesus Christ and deep joy live in light of this future that God has prepared for you.

    38:43-38:49

This year you can get off the endless treadmill of looking for satisfaction and fulfillment in the things this world has to offer.

    38:50-38:53

'Cause if you don't, you will continually hit dead ends and be frustrated.

    38:55-39:01

Instead, anticipate, long for, pray for, hope for, and live in light of the new creation which God will bring.

    39:02-39:03

If the worship team can just come up.

    39:05-39:09

God's end game and future for our lives is so much better than we have ever expected.

    39:09-39:11

It's beyond our wildest dreams, it's beyond words.

    39:12-39:14

It will by no means disappoint us or let us down.

    39:15-39:20

And I really couldn't resist the temptation to read a quote from one of my favorite books, and one of my favorite quotes of all time.

    39:21-39:24

It's the last book of the Chronicles of Narnia, The Last Battle.

    39:26-39:37

And if you're familiar with the book series or the movies, it's about these kids who go into this magical land named Narnia and they experience a Jesus figure named Aslan who takes them on these adventures.

    39:37-39:44

And in the last book, The Last Battle, Aslan recreates Narnia, he remakes it, and everything is completely restored.

    39:46-39:49

And he says to the children who've gone on all these adventures at the end, he says these words to them.

    39:51-40:06

"The term is over, the holidays have begun, "the dream has ended, this is the morning." And as he spoke, he no longer looked to them like a lion, but the things that began to happen after that were so great and beautiful that I cannot write them.

    40:07-40:09

And for us, this is the end of all the stories.

    40:10-40:14

And we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after.

    40:15-40:18

But for them, it was only the beginning of the real story.

    40:19-40:24

All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page.

    40:25-40:36

Now at last, they're beginning chapter one of the great story, which no one on earth has read, which goes on forever and ever, which every chapter is better than the one before.

    40:37-40:40

This is what we have to look forward to, brothers and sisters.

    40:42-40:45

A time when every day we're better than the one before.

    40:46-40:51

This isn't the end of our life, it's simply the beginning of the greatest story ever imaginable.

    40:52-41:02

Until that day when our faith becomes sight and our hope and dreams become reality, let us push forward with boldness and obedience to obey the mission that God has given to us.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Revelation 21:1-8

  1. What are some common misconceptions that many Christians have about eternity with God? How can these false ideas negatively impact our lives? Why is an accurate understanding of Heaven so important in a believer’s daily life?

  2. In the sermon it was said that anticipation for the future God has in store for Christians should transform how we live in the present. How would this look in your own life? Walmart.

    00:02-00:03

    Dream job, right?

    00:04-00:07

No, but to be honest, that was the last place I wanted to be.

    00:08-00:10

But I know I wasn't brought there by accident.

    00:10-00:12

I was brought there by the hand of God.

    00:13-00:19

And while I was there, God opened up a lot of opportunities for me to share and witness to the guys I worked with.

    00:20-00:25

But, to be honest, there were a lot of times when Jesus opened up a window for me and I didn't take it.

    00:26-00:32

I missed a lot of opportunities there because because I was too busy hating where I was instead of being faithful where I was.

    00:34-00:38

Hear me, you're called to witness even in the place you don't wanna be.

    00:39-00:42

God has you there for a reason.

    00:42-00:52

No matter where you end up or how menial your context seems, you were called to witness, you were called to make disciples and be bold for the gospel.

    00:55-01:00

So what people in your life have you been too afraid to share the gospel with?

    01:00-01:21

What people that God's placed before you and you just know the Holy Spirit's prompting you to share with them and you're just like, "I don't really want to, "I don't wanna risk the relationship, "I don't wanna be embarrassed, "that person's just a lot different than me, "I'm very uncomfortable with that." I pray that the Holy Spirit would break down barriers today and you would stop making excuses, I would stop making excuses, and we would be faithful to share the gospel with these people.

    01:23-01:25

During this time, could we just please close our eyes?

    01:26-01:31

I want you to envision that person, of those people that God has in your life, who he's called you to witness to.

    01:33-01:35

But you've been making excuses, you've been too afraid.

    01:36-01:47

I'm gonna pray that the Holy Spirit would give us boldness and courage to share the gospel with these people, not to beat them over the head with the Bible, not to be annoying, but to be faithful and to be loving.

    01:48-01:48

    So let's pray.

    01:49-01:58

God, thank you so much for this opportunity we have to come before you and pray for the Holy Spirit to give us the boldness and the power that is needed to share the gospel with these people.

    01:58-01:59

    I trust you, Holy Spirit.

    02:00-02:05

I trust that you're putting people on our minds right now who we were called to witness to.

    02:06-02:11

I pray that this week or the upcoming weeks, we would stop making excuses and we'd finally witness about you.

    02:11-02:13

We'd finally speak up about you.

    02:14-02:16

In the name of Jesus, amen.

    02:18-02:32

I also want us to pray and consider how the Holy Spirit, how Jesus wants us to witness across the face of this earth, because there are millions of people across the face of this planet never even heard the name of Jesus Christ.

    02:33-02:35

And they are dead in their sins, and they are without hope.

    02:36-02:38

And we are called, we are commissioned to spread the gospel to them.

    02:40-02:42

So let's start taking this call seriously.

    02:44-02:49

Let's start caring more about the eternal destiny of those around us and not being embarrassed.

    02:50-02:55

Let's not ignore this call anymore, but play our part in whatever way we can.

    02:59-03:02

So first, we are called to witness about Jesus and the power of the Spirit.

    03:04-03:07

Secondly, we're called to witness about Jesus in every context.

    03:08-03:13

Thirdly, we're called to witness about Jesus in light of the future.

    03:15-03:20

So Jesus is preaching to the disciples and then all of a sudden he starts floating away.

    03:21-03:25

It's kind of like, it's like a balloon you let go, you know, when you're a kid, let go of your balloon.

    03:25-03:32

He starts floating up and the disciples are just kind of like...

    03:36-03:39

And then the word says the two angels come up behind them.

    03:39-04:02

I just kind of imagine them just strolling up, just kind of get up behind them like, "Oh, what you guys looking at?" "Oh, well, you know, Jesus kind of flew away and we're just waiting for him to come back, you know?" And they're kind of like, "Yeah, you're gonna be waiting a long time." And they're like, "In the meantime, you have work to do." And I think so many Christians today are like the disciples in this passage.

    04:03-04:11

We lazily look for the return of Christ without actually doing something in this moment now.

    04:12-04:22

And the angels call the disciples to stop focusing so much on the return of Jesus that they are lazy and stand in the same place and they're calling them to live in light of this future.

    04:23-04:35

So yes, of course, Jesus calls us to eagerly long for the day when he returns but he also calls us to work and to witness in light of this future not be lazy and complacent because of this future.

    04:37-04:44

You know, I've been a student for about 18 years now and I'm about to head into three more years of graduate work at seminary.

    04:44-04:46

So I'm technically heading into 17th grade, if you think about it.

    04:47-04:58

And to be honest, I'm at the point in schooling where thinking about writing another paper and taking another test makes me want to die a little bit inside and just curl into a corner and just like cry.

    04:59-05:03

I just, I am totally not into school as much as I used to be.

    05:04-05:13

But in all those years of being a student, I've been tempted a lot to slack off and not give it my best, but then that future reality of final grades pops into my head.

    05:14-05:16

And if you're my friend or you're my family, you know how much I freak out about grades.

    05:17-05:18

    It's pretty, it's pretty annoying.

    05:20-05:23

But that future reality of grades pops into my head.

    05:23-05:29

I'm like, "Oh, I have to work hard. I have to work hard." And that propels me to work hard in the present, even when I don't feel like it.

    05:30-05:38

And in the same way, this future reality of the return of Jesus Christ should compel us to work hard in this life and be faithful with the mission He has given us.

    05:40-05:52

The second coming of Christ shouldn't make us lazy, but it should make us work harder and be faithful because a citizen commissioned with a task works differently when they know the King who entrusted them with that task is returning.

    05:53-05:58

We have been commissioned by the King and I for one do not want to be found sleeping on the job upon His return.

    06:00-06:11

So we tend to get so easily distracted from our true mission, and we forget the call of Jesus upon our lives to witness of his life, his death, his resurrection, and his ascension with everyone we come into contact with.

    06:12-06:28

Because this is why we have breath in this moment, to glorify God by making disciples in every nation so that they might in turn worship, serve, and bring further glory to our God, who is infinitely worthy.

    06:30-06:36

Have you ever had one of those days when you're trying to get a task done, you're trying to get accomplished, something accomplished, and you totally forget what you were doing?

    06:37-06:55

Like I go upstairs to grab something, and I get distracted, and I go back downstairs, laying on the couch, and I'm like, "Oh, I totally forgot to get what I even went upstairs for." Or like I'm working on a paper, or I'm studying for a test, I get sucked into Facebook world, I'm like, "Oh, I'll just do it for a minute." And you're on Facebook for like 30 minutes, like creeping like deeply into people's profiles.

    06:56-06:57

You know, that happens to me all the time.

    06:57-06:58

Does that happen to anyone else?

    06:58-06:59

    Don't leave me alone.

    06:59-07:00

    Okay, come on, be honest.

    07:00-07:01

    We all do that.

    07:01-07:03

We all creep on people via Facebook.

    07:03-07:04

    We all get distracted.

    07:05-07:06

Facebook is the biggest time waster.

    07:07-07:11

But I think in the same way, Jesus has given each and every one of us a mission.

    07:12-07:16

And we get so distracted with lesser things and we fail to do what we were even created to do.

    07:17-07:23

And at the end of my life, I don't wanna realize that I failed to accomplish the mission that was given to me.

    07:24-07:29

'Cause I think it's a serious thing to stand before God someday and say, I didn't make one single disciple.

    07:31-07:33

I didn't do the one thing you called me to do.

    07:34-07:41

As believers, we're not gonna come under judgment and God's wrath for that, but I think that is a very serious thing to think about.

    07:44-07:46

Stand before God and said, I didn't make one single disciple.

    07:46-07:52

I was too afraid, I was too busy, I was too distracted to do what you told me to do.

    07:53-08:02

That's a very serious thing that I think all of us to think about this week and reorient what we're living for and what our daily lives are about.

    08:04-08:12

I don't think this message would be complete if I didn't talk about our need to witness in light of the present and future reality of hell.

    08:15-08:25

'Cause we must witness about Jesus because the Bible clearly teaches that everyone who does not come to faith in Him will spend eternity apart from Him in a place called hell.

    08:27-08:32

I know we want to ignore this doctrine, we don't want to believe it, we want to push it out of the side and not think about it.

    08:33-08:35

But the Bible clearly teaches this, right?

    08:36-08:39

And it calls us as believers to live in light of it.

    08:41-08:46

One of the most sobering passages in the Bible to me is 2 Thessalonians 1, 7-9.

    08:46-08:59

Where Paul writes, "When the Lord Jesus returns, whenever He is revealed from heaven, with his mighty angels and flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

    08:59-09:07

They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.

    09:08-09:10

This verse should break our hearts, right?

    09:10-09:12

This verse should keep us up at night.

    09:13-09:23

This verse should compel us to obey the call of Jesus, to make disciples everywhere and to share the gospel so that people might be saved from their sins, and they might spend eternity with God.

    09:26-09:31

Let's not care more about being embarrassed in the eternal destiny of those we love and come into contact with.

    09:32-09:37

We must share the gospel because hell is real, eternity is long, and time is short.

    09:40-09:58

So as I said before, yes, we should eagerly await the day when Jesus returns, whenever He comes back, where he comes back to restore this earth, banish evil forever, unite heaven and earth, destroy evil forever, makes all things right.

    09:59-10:07

Yes, we should long for that day, but that day should propel us forward to obey the mission of Jesus, not backward into lazy and complacency.

    10:09-10:30

The return of Jesus should fuel us to witness and share the gospel because Jesus once said that for the end to come, "The gospel must first be proclaimed among all nations." And again, he said elsewhere, "This gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed "throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, "and then the end will come." So if you wanna see Jesus Christ return again, start sharing the gospel.

    10:31-10:32

    Never stop talking about Jesus.

    10:33-10:37

Do all that you can to spend yourself, spread the gospel everywhere you go.

    10:40-10:44

Let's spend ourselves and sacrifice to make this gospel known.

    10:46-11:08

And if you've been distracted, if your passion for witnessing and making disciples has been waning, I pray that the reality of hell, the reality of Jesus Christ returning would shock you out of complacency, would shock me out of complacency, and we would make witnessing about Jesus and making disciples our first priority.

    11:10-11:12

Because if that's not our first priority, why are we even here in this room?

    11:12-11:13

This is the biggest waste of time.

    11:14-11:19

If all we do is come here to get nourished and all we do is go out and do nothing with it.

    11:19-11:21

I'm guilty of that, to be honest.

    11:22-11:25

I come to church and I get fed with the word and I go out there and share with no one.

    11:26-11:35

I hang out in my Christian bubble, I hang out with my Christian friends and I never speak about Jesus to those who are perishing, to those who do not know him.

    11:37-11:39

I think church has become a hobby to a lot of us.

    11:40-11:43

And I think church is the weirdest hobby in the world if you don't take it seriously.

    11:45-11:52

Let's make this a serious thing that we are called to this church to get poured into so we can go out and pour into others.

    11:53-11:58

So we can spread the gospel, make disciples, and be bold for the gospel.

    11:58-12:00

That's why we have breath in this moment.

    12:00-12:02

That's why we exist right now.

    12:05-12:10

So to wrap things up, I spent the last three weeks talking about who Jesus is and what he requires of us.

    12:11-12:16

So let me ask you one last time to close up this series, who is Jesus?

    12:17-12:26

And as I've said before, your answer to this question is the most important thing about you, and it will determine how you live your life.

    12:27-12:33

To you, is Jesus Christ just some safe and comfortable felt board character that you can control and contain your daily life?

    12:34-12:42

Or is he the living ruler and king of the universe who you are submitting to, following, and witnessing of.

    12:43-12:48

I hope and pray that through this series that God has revealed who Jesus Christ truly is to you.

    12:48-12:51

And this knowledge would change every aspect of who we are.

    12:52-12:54

And we begin to take a risk for the mission of Jesus.

    12:56-13:02

Our Lord and master has given us a mission to tell everyone of who he is and what he has done.

    13:03-13:09

And I for one do not want to keep ignoring his call and acting like half-hearted obedience is good enough.

    13:11-13:15

So today let's decide to take witnessing and making disciples seriously.

    13:16-13:23

And let's witness in the power of the Holy Spirit in every context we find ourselves in, because our King is returning.

    13:24-13:29

  • 00:00-00:03

I was thinking over the past week just about how much this church has meant to me personally.

    00:04-00:14

I came here last August and to be honest I came during a really rough season of my life and I was really questioning the calling that God had placed on my life and I kind of lost faith in church for a little while.

    00:16-00:21

And little did I know that God led me to harvest to restore my faith and what he had called me to do.

    00:21-00:25

And I just want to take a few minutes just to honor Pastor Jeff and the blessing he's been in my life.

    00:25-00:29

He's been a big brother in the ministry to me and he's been such an encouragement.

    00:29-00:30

We have such an awesome pastor, don't we?

    00:32-00:32

    Don't we?

    00:32-00:33

Let's give him a round of applause.

    00:34-00:34

    (congregation applauding)

    00:35-00:46

This man loves this church so much, and I can't even begin to tell you how much I desire to be like him and to imitate his love for you.

    00:46-00:50

So I just want all of us to honor Pastor Jeff and just to thank him so much for all he's done for us.

    00:51-00:55

So I have to admit to you, I've been kind of a nerd my whole life.

    00:55-01:00

I've never been the most confident person I'm a cool person.

    01:00-01:02

I've always loved to learn new things.

    01:02-01:04

I've always had my nose in the book.

    01:04-01:06

I've always loved learning new stories.

    01:07-01:10

And it probably comes as no surprise to you that I used to love Sunday school.

    01:11-01:13

I used to love hearing Bible stories.

    01:13-01:20

And I was probably, that kid used to annoy you whenever the Sunday school teacher asked a question, my hand always went up, "Oh, I know, I know, I know." And everyone just hated me.

    01:20-01:22

So I was always the know-it-all in class.

    01:22-01:29

But I used to always love when my Sunday school teacher would bust out the felt board and teach us Sunday school stories.

    01:29-01:30

    Who remembers the felt board?

    01:31-01:32

    Felt, okay, pretty much everyone.

    01:33-01:40

Well, for those of you who didn't grow up in church, you never experienced the joy that is the felt board, you will experience it today.

    01:42-01:42

    Yeah.

    01:44-01:45

We're allowed to have fun in church, right?

    01:45-01:45

    Yeah.

    01:47-01:52

So if you don't know what a felt board is, it is used to tell different Bible stories.

    01:52-01:56

I guess you can tell other stories if you want, but I've only seen it told as Bible stories.

    01:57-02:00

And you get little felt figures and you can pretty much do any story you want.

    02:03-02:04

    Hopefully this works.

    02:05-02:05

    There we go.

    02:06-02:09

You get these little figures, very colorful.

    02:11-02:13

And you can pretty much act out any story you want.

    02:14-02:17

The thing about the felt board is it's pretty limited in its storytelling capacity.

    02:17-02:21

It turns the feeding of the 5,000 into the feeding of the 3.

    02:22-02:29

And the battles of the Old Testament look something more like a 2 on 2 basketball tournament or something, but it really is very useful.

    02:31-02:40

But as I was thinking over the past couple of weeks, I think it's very easy to turn the Bible into some simple moral story, something that's very cutesy.

    02:41-02:50

You watch different TV movies, different cartoons, look at different paintings, and they fail to capture what the Bible really says and who Jesus Christ really is.

    02:51-02:53

'Cause I don't know if you realize, but Jesus probably didn't look like this.

    02:54-02:58

I don't think he wore a sash, personally, but that's just my own opinion.

    02:58-03:08

But I think without realizing it, we've domesticated Jesus and we've made him safe and more like us 'cause we don't really want to know what he calls us to do.

    03:08-03:09

We don't really wanna submit to him.

    03:10-03:15

Without realizing it, we fail to realize who Jesus Christ really is and what he calls us to.

    03:15-03:23

And by making him this overly feminine, meek and mild, sash wearing, blonde hair, blue eyed Jesus, we've failed to realize who he really is.

    03:24-03:30

So over the course of the next several weeks, we're gonna go into several well-known passages that you probably haven't seen acted out on the felt board.

    03:30-03:32

And we're gonna talk about who Jesus Christ really is.

    03:33-03:36

We're gonna try to break Jesus out of the box that we put him in so much.

    03:38-03:43

And we're going to try to get beyond the felt board, the felt board Jesus who requires nothing of us.

    03:43-03:48

Because the Jesus of the Bible is tough and loving at the same time.

    03:49-03:53

And he calls us to great sacrifice and devotion.

    03:54-04:00

So over the next several weeks, I see three distinct calls from the gospel that we're gonna talk about.

    04:01-04:04

First, the call to submit to who Jesus Christ is.

    04:04-04:07

Second, a call to follow him wherever he goes.

    04:08-04:12

And thirdly, a call to be his witnesses wherever we go.

    04:13-04:20

So in this series, we're gonna dive into three well-known passages, as I said, And these will unpack each of these important calls from our Lord and Savior.

    04:21-04:33

I'm hoping that through this series, that God would show us that the call of Jesus costs us more than we ever expected, but it's filled with more joy and life than we ever thought possible.

    04:34-04:41

I hope you understand, I'm not trying to make fun of Jesus at all in this message, but I am trying to expose different false views of Jesus that we have.

    04:41-04:46

So if I make jokes or have fun, I am not making fun of the real Jesus.

    04:46-04:46

    I hope you understand.

    04:47-04:49

making fun of these false notions we have of Jesus.

    04:49-04:53

That's when I don't want to, the gospel is offensive enough, I don't want to offend you unnecessarily.

    04:54-04:55

That's when I say that at the out front.

    04:56-05:08

And I really pray this message would not just stay in this room, that it would stay with you forever, that it would impact your heart and your lives.

    05:09-05:14

'Cause how many times have I sat in a room like this and heard a message and it didn't leave the room with me?

    05:15-05:16

    It didn't impact me.

    05:17-05:22

So today we're going to talk about what it looks like to submit to Jesus and his calling on our lives.

    05:22-05:26

And to do this we're going to look at Mark 8, 27 through 38.

    05:26-05:27

So let's turn there real quick.

    05:29-05:35

As I read this story, I want all of us to look at it and to hear it like it's the first time we ever heard it.

    05:37-05:43

In Mark 8, 27, Mark writes, "And Jesus went on with his disciples to the village of Caesarea Philippi.

    05:44-06:01

And on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" And they told him, "John the Baptist, and others say Elijah, and others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.

    06:02-06:13

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed after three days, rise again.

    06:14-06:15

    And he said this plainly.

    06:16-06:18

And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

    06:18-06:34

But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan, for you're not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man." And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

    06:35-06:38

For whoever would save his life will lose it.

    06:38-06:43

but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel will save it.

    06:44-06:46

For what does a prophet demand to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

    06:47-06:50

For what can a man give in return for his soul?

    06:51-07:02

For whoever is ashamed of me and my words, and his adulterous and sinful generation, of him will a son of man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his father with the holy angels.

    07:02-07:03

    Let's pray.

    07:04-07:08

God, I just thank you so much for this awesome opportunity that I have to preach your word and to talk about Jesus.

    07:09-07:12

I pray that I would be faithful to your word.

    07:12-07:13

I would preach what it says.

    07:14-07:20

God, I pray you would hide me behind your cross and your Holy Spirit would speak in and through me because he is a far better preacher than I ever can be.

    07:21-07:24

God, we thank you so much for what you are gonna do in this place today.

    07:24-07:26

We thank you so much in advance.

    07:26-07:28

In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

    07:28-07:30

So I'm gonna set up this story for you a little bit.

    07:31-07:37

The passage says that Jesus and his disciples were walking to the village of Caesarea Philippi.

    07:37-07:38

    Here's Jesus walking.

    07:38-07:39

We got a couple of Jesus's up here.

    07:40-07:41

    Here's his disciples.

    07:42-07:47

Now, in order to understand this story completely, you'd understand the background of Caesarea Philippi.

    07:48-07:50

Caesarea Philippi is an area that was very pagan.

    07:51-07:54

It was an area that used to be a worship center for the false god, Baal.

    07:54-07:58

And then it was converted into a shrine to the god, Pan.

    07:59-08:01

And it's located at the base of a mountain.

    08:02-08:07

And actually they used to carve out different shelves in the cliffs that housed false gods.

    08:08-08:11

So I tried my best to make a mountain.

    08:11-08:13

I don't know why Jesus is almost taller than the mountain.

    08:13-08:14

    Don't ask me.

    08:14-08:15

But I had to work with what I had.

    08:16-08:20

So I was kind of mad this is a big cliff that's bigger than five inches.

    08:22-08:29

So they're walking to the village of Caesarea Philippi and Jesus turns around and asks them, who do people say that I am?

    08:29-08:31

He asked them, what's the public opinion of me?

    08:31-08:32

What do people think about me?

    08:33-08:43

And they answer him and say, "John the Baptist, pretty much John the Baptist "reincarnated because up until that point "he had been killed." Others say Elijah, and others, one of the prophets.

    08:45-08:49

We live in a culture that has a lot of false ideas of who Jesus is, right?

    08:50-08:52

There's a lot of false ideas of who Christ really is.

    08:52-08:59

People think he's a good moral teacher, he's a good example, he was a wise man, he's the last resort whenever I'm in trouble.

    09:00-09:03

But all of these are false, and they fall short of who Jesus Christ really is.

    09:04-09:07

And Jesus didn't really seem too thrilled with what they came up with there.

    09:07-09:14

So he turns to them in the midst of false gods, idols and shrines and false ideas of who he is.

    09:15-09:20

And he asked them the single most important question in human history, who do you say that I am?

    09:21-09:25

And I think this question extends to each and every one of us today in this room.

    09:26-09:34

And our answer to this question is the most important thing about us because our eternity rides on the answer to this question.

    09:36-10:08

So Peter, like he always does, he jumped at the opportunity to speak and he answered and said, "You are the Christ." And in Matthew's account of this story, he gives some more details and he says, "Whenever Peter said, 'You are the Christ,' Jesus turned immediately and looked at him and said, 'Blessed are you, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.'" So I'm praying today that like Peter, God will reveal the answer to this important question to us because hear me, when you know who Jesus Christ truly is, God himself revealed that to you.

    10:09-10:15

You didn't come to that conclusion yourself, you weren't smart enough to figure it out, God himself had to open up your heart to that reality.

    10:17-10:20

So I pray in this time that we wouldn't believe what the world says about Jesus.

    10:21-10:24

Instead, we would believe what the word says about Jesus.

    10:25-10:28

So don't let flesh and blood tell you who Jesus is, but God himself.

    10:30-10:34

We just stop letting the world around us influence our view and our opinion of Jesus.

    10:35-10:38

And instead let the word inform us of who he is.

    10:39-10:43

'Cause Jesus is not just some moral teacher or a good example, he's not just a good man.

    10:43-10:46

He is the living King of the universe.

    10:46-10:47

    He is God.

    10:47-10:50

He calls for our absolute devotion and submission.

    10:52-10:58

So my first point is that we are to submit to the revealed character of Jesus.

    11:00-11:06

I think submission has been really given a bad rap today, in today's culture, especially even the church.

    11:06-11:08

It's almost like a swear word to talk about submission.

    11:08-11:11

Whenever people hear it, they get on edge and they don't like it.

    11:11-11:16

It's really unfortunate because in the Bible, submission is a very beautiful picture of our relationship with Christ.

    11:17-11:21

Submission is to voluntarily yield one's will to another.

    11:21-11:25

It is to absolutely surrender to someone, to put yourself under their authority.

    11:26-11:30

A lot of times we have this picture that God is up in heaven like putting us in a chokehold and forcing us to submit.

    11:31-11:31

    Could he do that?

    11:32-11:32

    Could he do that?

    11:33-11:34

He's the almighty God of the universe.

    11:34-11:38

But according to the Bible, he lovingly leads us into submission.

    11:38-11:39

    He doesn't force us.

    11:41-11:52

So to submit to Jesus Christ and who he is, is to lay down one's excuses and desires and wants in order to fully devote oneself to Him.

    11:54-12:01

Whether we realize it or not, we all submit to a multiplicity of people and realities on a daily basis.

    12:02-12:05

We all submit to the law of gravity every single day, right?

    12:06-12:08

I don't see many people complaining about that.

    12:09-12:12

But whether you realize it or not, if you fight against it, it's not gonna work out for you.

    12:13-12:18

I can get to the top of this building and jump off and say, I'm not gonna submit to gravity, I'm gonna fight against it.

    12:18-12:20

and you'll find me splattered on the side of the sidewalk.

    12:21-12:22

It's not going to work out for me.

    12:22-12:26

In the same way, we all submit to the government, and when we don't, it doesn't work out for us.

    12:27-12:31

Kids in the room, whenever you don't submit to your parents, does that usually go well for you?

    12:32-12:33

I know it didn't for me.

    12:33-12:34

I got spanked a couple times.

    12:36-12:37

    Yeah, bad.

    12:37-12:43

It's not like today, whenever a kid messes up and the parent says, you go in the corner and you think about that.

    12:44-12:45

Back then, anyone could beat you.

    12:46-12:50

Back in the '90s, your aunt, your uncle, your grandfather, or your grandma, anyone could beat you, your teacher could hit you.

    12:53-12:59

And if you don't submit to these things and these people, it's not gonna go well for you and you will regret it.

    12:59-13:06

In the same way, if you don't submit and surrender your life to Jesus Christ, it's not gonna go well for you and you're going to regret it.

    13:08-13:14

So I'm gonna ask the question that Jesus Christ asked his disciples, who do you say that I am?

    13:16-13:20

I know there has to be someone in this room false idea of who Jesus Christ really is.

    13:21-13:28

I have to believe there are some in this room who have never truly submitted to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

    13:29-13:36

If that is you today, I pray that God himself would open up your heart to the reality of who Jesus Christ really is.

    13:39-13:51

Stop listening to what the world says about Jesus and believe what God says about him through his word because Jesus Christ is alive, he is real, And He really did conquer Satan, sin, and death on the cross. Amen?

    13:54-13:59

He really did come to give us new life and salvation from our sins.

    13:59-14:01

There is no middle ground when it comes to Jesus.

    14:01-14:04

He didn't leave you room to be so-so about Him, be like, "I'm not really sure." No.

    14:05-14:08

You have to make a decision. You have to stop riding the fence.

    14:08-14:18

I pray that God would move you to repent of your sin, to turn your back on Satan, sin, and self, and turn your direction to Jesus Christ, and trust in him as your Lord and your Savior.

    14:19-14:20

    You'll never regret it.

    14:22-14:26

Number two, we are to submit to the perfect plans of Jesus.

    14:28-14:32

In verse 31, Jesus began to talk again.

    14:32-14:40

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed after three days, rise again.

    14:40-14:41

    He said this plainly.

    14:42-15:01

And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him "But turning and seeing his disciples, "he rebuked Peter, saying, 'Get behind me, Satan, "'for you are not setting your mind on things of God, "'but on the things of man.'" Jesus' mission to go to the cross was so unprecedented, it was so against any idea of what people had the Messiah.

    15:01-15:07

Back then they thought the Messiah was gonna be a warrior who would come and overthrow the Romans and give them the kingdom of Israel back.

    15:07-15:11

So Peter's hearing this and he's like, "Wait, you're gonna be killed?

    15:11-15:13

"And I don't really get this.

    15:13-15:19

"Like, what are you talking about?" He didn't really agree, so he decided he was gonna try to set the sovereign creator of the universe straight.

    15:19-15:20

He wanted to take Jesus aside and be like, "Oh, come here, come here.

    15:21-15:25

Jesus, get over here, get over here, come here." You laugh, but we do this all the time, right?

    15:25-15:30

God tells us something in his word, or we know what God expects of us, and we're like, "What? Really?

    15:31-15:32

    This is the 21st century.

    15:33-15:34

There's no way this is for us.

    15:34-15:34

    There's no way.

    15:34-15:37

Jesus, come over here, come here, come here." Try to give him some advice.

    15:41-15:42

But I do that all the time.

    15:42-15:45

Whenever I don't agree with God, take him aside and try to tell him what I think.

    15:46-15:49

I think this is a perfect example of how Peter constantly put his foot in his mouth.

    15:50-15:53

And he gives me a lot of hope 'cause I do a lot of stupid stuff like him every day.

    15:54-16:01

So I think it's funny 'cause Jesus goes from commending him one minute and saying, "Blessed are you," and literally the next minute he calls him Satan.

    16:03-16:05

I feel like that's like the end of name-calling.

    16:05-16:06

Like, how can you trump that?

    16:07-16:10

    Like, you're in a name-calling contest, "Satan." I got nothing, I'm done.

    16:12-16:14

But I think men in the room can kind of relate to this, right?

    16:14-16:15

    We can relate to Peter.

    16:16-16:28

Guys, have you ever had one of those days when you're like, you know, really super smooth with your wife or your girlfriend, you're saying all the right things, and she's all over you, and all of a sudden you say something completely stupid that ruins everything that you did before.

    16:29-16:37

And you're like, "Why did I say that?" And you're building all these points up for yourself, all these brownie points, and all of a sudden they're completely gone, you just start from zero, right?

    16:38-16:38

I've heard what's happened to Peter.

    16:39-16:44

He got the highest recommendation, and he got a gold sticker on his report card, all of a sudden Jesus rips it off and calls him Satan.

    16:46-16:55

But in all seriousness, I think like Peter, there are so many times when I hear the words of Jesus and I don't like it and I don't agree.

    16:57-17:00

But in those moments, I'm completely wrong.

    17:02-17:07

And I need to repent and obey instead of harden my heart and resist his will for my life.

    17:09-17:15

in those moments I need to set my mind on the things of God, not in the things of man.

    17:16-17:22

Because the ways and the things of man are short-sighted, foolish, and destructive, and they will lead you nowhere good.

    17:24-17:32

Solomon says in Proverbs 14, 12, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." Who in the room is good with directions?

    17:32-17:33

    Just be honest.

    17:33-17:38

You say, "I'm seriously, put me in the wilderness, I can get back home." Good with directions.

    17:39-17:40

Well, I am not good with directions.

    17:40-17:42

    I am very directionally challenged.

    17:42-17:44

If you want to get lost, I'm your guy.

    17:44-17:46

Otherwise, I'm not gonna be much help to you.

    17:47-17:49

So I think the greatest invention in human history is the GPS.

    17:49-17:51

I literally use the GPS every day.

    17:53-18:00

And there's been a couple of times where I'm driving somewhere and using my GPS and my GPS says to go this way, but I'm like, wait, that's not the right way.

    18:00-18:01

    I know where I'm going.

    18:01-18:01

    I got this.

    18:02-18:03

And nine times out of 10, I get lost.

    18:05-18:09

But I think in the same way, We get to a fork in the roads of our life.

    18:10-18:12

And we know what the word of God says.

    18:12-18:13

We know where God wants us to go.

    18:13-18:14

He wants us to go down this way.

    18:14-18:15

But you think, you know what?

    18:16-18:17

I got this, I know what I'm doing.

    18:17-18:18

And you decide to go your own way.

    18:20-18:22

And you end up going down a path you never thought you'd go.

    18:25-18:25

    And you get lost.

    18:28-18:31

So often we want God to follow our advice and to follow our timetables.

    18:32-18:35

But little do we know that if he did, our lives would be an absolute train wreck.

    18:35-18:38

and we would be going down a road of darkness and despair.

    18:39-18:45

God's plans and his ways are so counterintuitive to our own, but they are literally a million times better.

    18:45-18:49

His perspective is much better than mine and much better than yours.

    18:50-18:58

So while I was studying and preparing for this message, I began to think what would happen if like, Peter took him aside and said, far be it from you, Lord, this will never happen to you.

    18:58-19:02

And Jesus is kind of like, hmm, you know what, Peter, you're right.

    19:02-19:04

I don't know if I was thinking about this whole cross thing.

    19:04-19:05

    It sounded really painful.

    19:05-19:06

I don't really want to do that.

    19:06-19:07

I'm just going to scrap that.

    19:07-19:09

I'm just going to build up my ministry and see what happens.

    19:10-19:15

If Jesus had heeded the advice of Peter in that moment, we would all be dead in our sins and separated from God.

    19:17-19:25

And in the same way, if Jesus heeded the advice that I give him every day and the advice that you give him every day, we'd be missing out on his best for our lives.

    19:26-19:26

    Amen?

    19:29-19:37

We need to stop giving God advice and instead submit to Him and what He says and trust that He knows what He's doing.

    19:39-19:47

There have been so many times in my life when I didn't submit to Jesus and I knew what He wanted me to do and I'd said, "No, I'm not gonna obey." And I've regretted it ever since.

    19:47-19:53

There's never been one time in my life where I obeyed Jesus and submitted to what He says and I've regretted it.

    19:53-19:56

It's been hard and it's been difficult, but it's always been worth it.

    19:57-19:58

And it's always worked out in the end.

    20:01-20:05

So what hard truths are you ignoring or resisting in your heart today?

    20:06-20:08

You know what the word of God says about this issue.

    20:08-20:11

You know what the Holy Spirit's convicting you about it.

    20:11-20:12

You just don't want to be honest about it.

    20:12-20:13

    You keep pushing it down.

    20:13-20:15

You keep resisting it 'cause you don't want to deal with it.

    20:16-20:18

Maybe it's with your sexual life.

    20:18-20:20

Maybe you're doing something in this area you never thought you'd do.

    20:21-20:22

And you're feeling the conviction of the Holy Spirit.

    20:22-20:23

You know what the word of God says.

    20:23-20:25

You'd be like, no, I don't want to listen to it.

    20:25-20:25

    You push it down.

    20:25-20:27

    You resist, you resist.

    20:29-20:33

Maybe God wants you to step out in your life you take a risk, but you keep making excuses.

    20:34-20:35

You keep resisting the call of God in your life.

    20:38-20:45

Please, your own opinions and your own ways will lead you down a path you never thought you'd go, a path of darkness and destruction.

    20:45-20:54

But if you follow the way of Jesus, you'll go down a path that's filled with more joy and more life than you ever thought possible, even though it's hard and even though it's difficult.

    20:58-21:03

Stop fighting God and surrender to his perfect plans for your life, even when they don't make sense.

    21:04-21:08

Because there are times where God's directions seem ridiculous, but they always work out.

    21:09-21:14

This Bible is filled with a thousand different stories about how ridiculous God's plans are, but how they always work out in the end.

    21:15-21:15

    Amen?

    21:16-21:17

That can be true for your life.

    21:18-21:27

God may be telling you something right now and it seems ridiculous and it seems stupid, but if you obey him, God will accomplish wonders in your life and he will do amazing things in and through you.

    21:29-21:33

Thirdly, we are to submit to the infinite worth of Jesus.

    21:34-21:42

Jesus goes on and says, "If anyone come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.

    21:43-21:46

For whoever would save his life will lose it.

    21:47-21:52

But whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospels will save it.

    21:53-21:57

For what does a prophet demand to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul.

    21:57-22:00

For what can a man give in return for his soul?

    22:02-22:08

See, everyone in this world is searching for life and happiness, but they're looking for it in all the wrong places.

    22:09-22:15

True life and fulfillment cannot be found in money, comfort, people, or anything else this world has to offer.

    22:15-22:29

That's why in this passage and in the gospel, Jesus Christ calls us to end our pointless pursuit of happiness and things that fail to deliver And by doing so, we'll find all that we were looking for in Him.

    22:30-22:35

By letting go of what this world says is the good life, we can find true life in Jesus.

    22:37-22:41

Must be willing to put aside our dreams and our desires in order to grab a hold of true life in Jesus Christ.

    22:43-22:51

In Matthew 13, 44, Jesus describes himself as a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up.

    22:52-22:57

then in his joy, he goes and sells all that he has to buy that field.

    22:58-23:03

In all of his joy, he goes and sells all that he has to buy that field.

    23:04-23:11

Jesus is infinitely more valuable than anything else in this universe, and he is worthy giving up everything for.

    23:12-23:17

If you have everything this world has to offer, but you don't have Jesus, then you really have nothing.

    23:19-23:19

    What's the point?

    23:20-23:41

Brad's passage says, "For what can a man, "what does a prophet demand to gain the whole world "and forfeit his soul?" We're gonna delve more deeply into this topic next week, but I want all of us, myself included, to realize that Jesus is far more valuable and far more worthy than anything else in this world or anything we are currently pursuing in our lives.

    23:41-23:50

And once we figure that out, once we realize that and submit to that truth, we'll find all the joy and the fulfillment we were so desperately searching for all of our lives.

    23:53-23:57

Now, some of you may find this shocking, but I didn't have a girlfriend until I was 21 years old.

    23:58-23:58

    Surprising, right?

    24:00-24:01

Oh, you guys are hurting my feelings.

    24:01-24:02

    No one was surprised.

    24:03-24:05

I'm gonna say that one more time and maybe feel a little bit better.

    24:06-24:10

Yeah, some of you may find this shocking, but I didn't have a girlfriend until I was 21 years old.

    24:12-24:13

    Oh, yeah, it's surprising, right?

    24:13-24:13

    Right?

    24:15-24:17

Most of you are like, no, it makes complete sense to me.

    24:18-24:25

So for all those years, I lived a single lifestyle, playing video games, watching movies, hanging out with my friends whenever I wanted.

    24:26-24:30

And I never really met anyone who I wanted to give up all my freedom for, you know?

    24:30-24:32

Guys know how, you know how it is.

    24:33-24:41

Married people in the room are like, "Yeah, I know what you mean." But then I met Kate, my current girlfriend, and everything changed.

    24:41-24:45

And her, I found someone worth giving up my former life for.

    24:45-24:51

I promise I wouldn't embarrass her, I'm not gonna go into too much detail, but I found someone worth giving up some things for.

    24:52-24:53

So I put down the controller and went on a date.

    24:54-24:56

That's a word for some guys in this culture, amen?

    24:56-24:58

Go on, put down the controller and go on a date with a real girl.

    25:00-25:05

It really wasn't much of a contest, real flesh and blood girl, or trying to prestige for the fifth time on call of duty.

    25:05-25:06

It wasn't really much of a contest.

    25:07-25:08

    And you know what?

    25:08-25:13

I really don't miss those things at all, because I found something much greater and much more fulfilling.

    25:16-25:24

In a much greater way, Jesus is infinitely worthy of our time, our efforts, and lives than anything else in this world.

    25:27-25:28

    What was that?

    25:30-25:30

    Yeah.

    25:33-25:34

    Lost my train of thought.

    25:34-25:38

But, Jesus calls us in this passage to deny ourselves.

    25:38-25:41

And this is very intricately tied to the idea of submission.

    25:41-25:47

To deny yourself is to disregard your preferences, your ambitions, your wants, and your dreams in order to obey Jesus.

    25:47-25:50

It's His way over my way.

    25:51-25:53

We're to deny ourselves and go after Jesus.

    25:54-26:01

This laying down of our old lives to take up a new life in Christ isn't easy and suffering will be normative and often.

    26:03-26:06

Seriously, the way of Jesus causes you to do everything the hard way.

    26:07-26:09

    Literally everything. Money, sex, relationships.

    26:10-26:15

Every way is the hard way, but it is so worth it.

    26:16-26:20

And Jesus calls us in this passage to be even willing to go to death in order to obey him.

    26:23-26:28

The Christian life is difficult and arduous, but in the end, we get everything that really matters.

    26:29-26:37

Salvation from our sin, a restored relationship with God, a new family in the church, a new identity, and eternity in the presence of our creator.

    26:38-26:39

What more could we ask for?

    26:39-26:42

We have everything that really matters if we have Jesus Christ.

    26:45-26:49

This passage ends with one of the most sobering verses in all the entire Bible.

    26:52-27:24

When Jesus goes on and says, "For whoever is ashamed of me, in my words and his adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." What Jesus is saying here is that if any one of us is more concerned about what this culture thinks about us, what people think about us, we put more value and worth in what people think about us, there may be a chance we don't really know Him and we're still under the wrath of God.

    27:25-27:26

I mean, this verse keeps me up at night.

    27:26-27:28

This verse is scary when you think about it.

    27:29-27:36

So if our lives are marked with an embarrassment and an ashamement of Jesus, we should examine ourselves.

    27:37-27:37

    examine myself.

    27:39-27:41

Why am I so often embarrassed of Jesus?

    27:42-27:45

Why am I so often quick to shut my mouth around somebody who needs him?

    27:46-27:57

Because we are around people on a daily basis who are heading to an eternal hell apart from Jesus, and we're not gonna talk to them because we're too afraid, we're too embarrassed.

    27:58-27:59

That doesn't make sense to me.

    28:00-28:01

Yeah, I do that all the time in my life.

    28:01-28:03

I know this person doesn't know Jesus.

    28:03-28:12

I know this person is heading for an eternity of separation from God, but I care more about my reputation and what this person thinks about me, and about more not getting embarrassed.

    28:13-28:14

    What's up with that?

    28:15-28:16

Why do I think that way?

    28:17-28:22

When Jesus is leading me to talk to somebody, I think, "Ah, I don't wanna be embarrassed.

    28:22-28:24

"I don't want them to think less of me." And I leave.

    28:26-28:30

I fail to be faithful with what God told me to do.

    28:31-28:40

I pray that God will make us fear disobedience more than embarrassment and what people think about us.

    28:42-28:57

Because the apostle Paul says in Romans 1:16, "For I'm unashamed, I'm not ashamed of the gospel of Christ "for it's the power of God and the salvation "for all who believe." The gospel has the power to save, it has the power to transform lives.

    28:57-29:01

And there are billions of people in this world who do not know Jesus and they need to know Him.

    29:02-29:05

'Cause Jesus Christ is worthy of their praise and their worship and their lives.

    29:06-29:09

He is worthy and He is awesome and He is worth talking about.

    29:10-29:11

    He is worth proclaiming.

    29:14-29:17

Do you and I really believe that Jesus Christ is worth giving up everything for?

    29:19-29:26

Is He worth laying aside our sinful desires, our time, our money, our efforts, or to follow Him and please Him?

    29:28-29:30

Does your life really make sense in light of scripture?

    29:31-29:35

So I look at my life and I see what Jesus calls me to and this word doesn't match up.

    29:39-29:42

I'm not living the life of radical devotion that Jesus calls me to.

    29:44-29:47

There are a lot of things in my life that are more worthy to me than Jesus.

    29:47-29:49

I think if we're honest with ourselves, we can all say that.

    29:51-29:54

So what in your life is more worthy to you than Jesus Christ?

    29:55-30:01

Is it obvious from your life, your relationships, your finances, that Jesus Christ is the highest priority in your life.

    30:01-30:03

And if not, what is holding you back?

    30:04-30:11

Maybe there's someone in your life that's holding you back, a relationship you have, and you need to end that relationship 'cause they're keeping you from all that God has for you.

    30:12-30:18

Maybe you're stockpiling your money and you're not being generous, and God's calling you to fund his mission to spread this gospel.

    30:20-30:24

Whatever it is, I pray that God will reveal these idols to our lives.

    30:24-30:29

We would allow God to place Jesus Christ at the rightful center of our hearts where he belongs.

    30:30-30:39

Because surrendering and submitting oneself to Jesus Christ is the fuel of the fire of obedience, devotion, and unashamed witnessing.

    30:40-30:44

We are called to submit to the Jesus Christ of this Bible.

    30:45-30:48

He is not just some meek, mild-mannered, nice guy.

    30:49-30:54

We have to get beyond this felt-born Jesus who requires nothing of us.

    30:55-30:57

We must submit to the Jesus of the Bible.

    30:57-31:03

He is the Savior, God, Lord, King, and Christ, and He deserves everything that you have.

    31:03-31:06

Anything less is disobedient and sinful.

    31:08-31:20

So I pray today, we would give everything we have for Him in the cause of the gospel to see lives transformed, hearts changed, legacies altered forever, and our lives would count for the gospel.

    31:20-31:21

    Let's pray.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 8:27-38

  1. What are some false views and versions of Jesus that exist in the culture around us and have invaded the church? What false views do you struggle with or tend to fall into that warp your view of Jesus and His call?

  2. Submission is a very unpopular concept but it is woven throughout the Bible as a vital aspect of the Christian life. Why is submission so difficult for all of us and what are some ways as Christians we can strive towards a life of submission?

  3. In Mark 8:31-33 Peter attempts to give Jesus some advice about what Jesus should do and Peter is rebuked for this. In what ways do we tend to mirror Peter by giving God advice and what can we learn from this passage in terms of submitting to the ways of Jesus?

  4. What are some obvious signs that a person is completely surrendered to Jesus and believes He is worthy above all? Is it obvious from your life that Jesus is the highest priority in your life?

And what a privilege it is to be able to come and open God's word up and to share some truths from God's word.

    00:05-00:07

What a great day to celebrate, moms.

    00:07-00:13

And I hope that you are able to celebrate the mom that God has blessed you with.

    00:13-00:17

And moms, I pray that you can celebrate the kids that God has blessed you with.

    00:18-00:20

And we're gonna look a little bit about that.

    00:20-00:25

When Pastor Jeff asked me to speak, it was probably, I think it was a couple months ago, and we talked.

    00:25-00:29

I don't think we both realized that today was Mother's Day when we originally talked.

    00:29-00:32

And so he said, Jeremiah, we're doing this series, can you do something on parenting?

    00:33-00:35

And I said, sure, I'd love to do it.

    00:36-00:42

And then I started to realize it's Mother's Day, and I was like, what mom wants to hear a parent's message on Mother's Day?

    00:42-00:44

And so I know Jeff was just setting me up.

    00:44-00:47

I think he knew all along, and he was setting me up.

    00:47-00:51

But it is an honor to come, and I hope that you have come today to hear God's word.

    00:51-00:57

And I pray that that's the reason why you've come to church this morning, to hear God's word, and that's what we're gonna look at.

    00:58-01:06

And it might not be the nice little bow ribbon message about mothers, but we're gonna talk about parenting.

    01:06-01:08

I hope the third reason is why I wanna talk about this this morning.

    01:09-01:14

And the first reason why I wanted to do this is because it is a tribute to my mom.

    01:14-01:22

And I was blessed to have a mom and a dad who raised their six kids with the love and a passion for God.

    01:22-01:23

    Were they perfect?

    01:23-01:25

    No, and they were not.

    01:25-01:27

I'd be the first to admit that, and they'd be the first to admit that.

    01:27-01:29

But do they do it biblically?

    01:29-01:29

    Yes.

    01:30-01:32

And I praise God for that.

    01:32-01:35

And I sent my mom a text early this morning.

    01:35-01:37

She probably wasn't even up yet, so I hope I didn't wake her up.

    01:38-01:46

But I sent her a text this morning just thanking her and for how she raised us and the unconditional love that she gave us.

    01:46-01:56

And I know that if you have a child, that there is a bond, there is a love there that doesn't matter what your child does, that you're gonna unconditionally love them.

    01:56-02:00

And I see that now with the four kids that God has blessed me with, soon to be five kids.

    02:01-02:02

    That love that is there.

    02:02-02:09

And so part of what I want to share this morning, even on parenting, is really because what I've learned from my mom and dad.

    02:09-02:11

I have not arrived, I don't know it all.

    02:11-02:13

I learned everything from my parents.

    02:13-02:19

And so it is a tribute to my mom and what she has taught me and what she has done in my life.

    02:19-02:22

And then also, I pray this message will inspire you.

    02:22-02:27

You know, sometimes when you hear a message on parenting, and you can sit there and walk out defeated.

    02:27-02:29

That's not my prayer or my desire at all.

    02:29-02:41

My prayer and my desire is that you walk inspired to say, "God, let me have children, "let me have grandchildren that have a heart "and a passion for you." And that's my desire and that's my prayer.

    02:41-02:50

You know when you sometimes walk into a classroom and they teach on something and then you walk out just going, "Wow, I can do it this way a little bit better "and I need to work on this." That's what I pray will happen this morning.

    02:50-03:05

That as we look at the scriptures, that you'll be able to sit there and say, "Okay God, wherever I'm at in this stage of life, "God, let me take another step forward." And then, the last reason why I wanna share this message with you this morning is hopefully to establish joy.

    03:06-03:12

Your theme this year is on joy, and this whole thing you've been talking about is joy in these type of relationships.

    03:13-03:19

And my prayer is that maybe right now as you sit here, there's not a lot of joy in your parenting, or as a mother, whatever it may be.

    03:20-03:33

But my prayer is that as you apply some of these truths to your life, and you listen to what the Word of God says, then by God's grace, maybe next year as Mother's Day comes around, there will be joy in your heart.

    03:34-03:40

You know, I realize more as I have kids that my joy a lot depends on how my kids live.

    03:41-03:44

And if you have kids and you have grandkids, you know that.

    03:44-03:50

If they're living, seeking after God, how you want them to be, the joy comes and Proverbs talks about that.

    03:51-03:54

But if you have kids that aren't, it's hard sometimes to have joy.

    03:54-04:11

And my prayer and my desire is that we look at God's word, that you can apply some of these truths to your life and say, "God, I wanna have a family that is honoring, "that is believing, that is seeking after you." Listen, parenting is the most important task.

    04:11-04:13

It is so important in our life.

    04:14-04:18

Martin Luther said this, he says, "This is at least all married people should know.

    04:19-04:36

"They can do no better work and do nothing more valuable "either for God, for Christendom, for all the world, "for themselves and for their children "than to bring up their children well." What an incredible gift and responsibility that we have in parenting.

    04:37-04:38

Can we pray together and we'll jump in here.

    04:41-04:43

    Father, I need you.

    04:44-04:48

God, there is nothing that I can say that will help encourage, inspire a life.

    04:48-04:49

Lord, it is you and your word.

    04:51-04:54

And God, Proverbs is full of wisdom and truths.

    04:55-05:05

And so God, I pray that you would take us and give ears to hear, Lord, and help every person in here, Lord, to look at your word and to be encouraged this morning.

    05:06-05:08

For your glory, God, in the name of Jesus, I do pray.

    05:09-05:09

    Amen.

    05:10-05:16

Now, I know as a preacher, getting up and talking, I'm parenting, I'm putting a big bullseye right on my family, okay?

    05:16-05:43

I know everybody's gonna look at my four kids and say, "Okay, you can talk about this, you can do it." I said, "I am the first one to admit it, "my family's not perfect, okay?" Last Sunday I spoke at Harvest Columbus, and as we're walking out, my little girl, Sayla, two years old, was about to climb up on this ledge I didn't want her to be on, and I looked, I'm talking with the pastor right here, and I looked at Sayla, I said, "Sayla, don't get up there." And as cute as a two-year-old can, she looked at me and said, "No!" And got right up on the ledge.

    05:43-05:46

    And I said, "Excuse me."

    05:48-05:48

    (laughs)

    05:48-05:49

I don't care how fast or how embarrassing it is.

    05:49-05:52

My family's not perfect, and please don't get that.

    05:52-06:02

Even as I walk through some of these things this week, and God knows what we need, and I think I have learned more this week than probably you're gonna learn in the next 30, 40 minutes that I have to share.

    06:03-06:12

And God is using these truths right here to refine me and to help me, and I have not arrived, my wife hasn't arrived, my family hasn't arrived.

    06:12-06:22

I remember growing up as a teenager, I used to look at parents or look at teenagers I look at other kids and go, "Man, my kids will never act like that." I mean, never would they ever do that.

    06:22-06:24

    Yeah, that's totally changed now.

    06:25-06:26

    That has not changed.

    06:27-06:28

I'll tell you what I look at more.

    06:29-06:36

I look at more now how parents and grandparents act or react when their children misbehave.

    06:37-06:39

Because listen, children are gonna misbehave.

    06:39-06:41

And teenagers are gonna do foolish things.

    06:42-06:43

    It's gonna happen.

    06:44-06:54

What I look at and what I want, I wanna make sure that how I react to it and what I do as a parent is according to this book right here.

    06:56-06:57

    Because that's what's important.

    06:58-07:02

And so I want us to look at some things this morning.

    07:02-07:06

If you have your Bibles, you can turn to Proverbs 22.

    07:07-07:10

Turn to Proverbs 22, and we're gonna look at parenting here a little bit.

    07:11-07:14

And this message is not just for moms.

    07:15-07:17

This message is not just for parents.

    07:18-07:21

I believe it's for grandparents, and I believe for every person that is here.

    07:22-07:29

Listen, I believe we all, as children of God, I believe that we all are teachers in some form or fashion.

    07:29-07:30

And you say, "Jim, I don't have any kids.

    07:30-07:33

"I don't have any grandkids." Listen, you're all our teacher.

    07:33-07:40

You don't know when your neighbor or that coworker, or you don't know when maybe your child is gonna come and ask for advice.

    07:40-07:43

They're gonna come to a situation and go, man, I don't know what to do with my child here.

    07:43-07:46

I don't know what to do in this situation or how I handle this.

    07:46-07:51

And listen, I wanna give you some things today that you can apply, that you can help them out with.

    07:52-08:01

So no matter where you're at today, I hope that what we talk about today, you can hold onto and grasp and say, listen, I can use this.

    08:01-08:01

    I don't know when.

    08:02-08:05

The Bible says, always be ready to give an account for the hope that lies within us.

    08:05-08:08

And listen, we should know how to handle situations.

    08:09-08:15

And if we're ready for that, then I believe God will bring those people along your path where you can reach out and help them.

    08:16-08:22

We say, listen, I don't know everything, but listen, listen to what the scripture says, and let me show you some things, and maybe some ways that you can do it in.

    08:23-08:31

And then, I believe if you're a teenager here, I believe, I hope that as I go through some of this, you will realize how hard parenting is a little.

    08:32-08:34

And you'll give your parents just a little bit of slack.

    08:34-08:37

Because it is tough, and it is difficult.

    08:38-08:42

And I hope that some of these things that you'll be able to look at and go, "Wow, my parents have to do all that?

    08:42-08:46

"I guess I'll give 'em a little bit of a break." Okay, so let's look here.

    08:46-08:52

Proverbs chapter 22, and that's where we're gonna get our outline from Proverbs chapter 22, verse six.

    08:52-08:53

This is where we're gonna get our outline today.

    08:54-09:03

We're gonna jump all through Proverbs because Proverbs in most cases is not a book that you just kinda walk verse by verse down because of how Solomon wrote the book.

    09:03-09:05

You gotta understand how Solomon wrote this book.

    09:05-09:16

And he talks a little about parenting here He talks about it here and then he talks about it here, and he'll talk about wisdom here and here, and then he'll talk about purity, and he kind of jumps around as he writes this book to his children.

    09:17-09:21

And so that's what we're gonna look at, but we're gonna get our outline here from Proverbs 22, verse six.

    09:21-09:22

    Let's read it together.

    09:22-09:23

    It says this.

    09:23-09:26

"Train up a child in the way he should go.

    09:27-09:35

"Even when he is old, he would not depart from it." Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he would not depart from it.

    09:36-09:39

Now I know this verse is a very highly debated verse.

    09:39-09:45

And I'm not gonna spend as much time on the second part of this verse, 'cause that's the part that's really highly debated.

    09:46-09:48

When he is old, he will not depart from it.

    09:48-09:49

But this is what I do wanna say.

    09:49-09:52

I do not believe all the proverbs are promises.

    09:53-09:57

That's not, they're principles that God is giving to us.

    09:57-10:01

That they are wise observations, they're underlining principles, they're guidelines.

    10:01-10:03

Do we need to listen to 'em and obey?

    10:03-10:04

    Yes.

    10:05-10:11

But I don't believe you can take this as a promise and say if I train in this perfect way, then 100% he's gonna come out right.

    10:12-10:14

Because look at, you can just example, look at verse four.

    10:15-10:19

It says, "The reward for humility and fear of the Lord "is rich as honor in life.

    10:20-10:29

"Not every person who is humble "and fears the Lord is rich." But there is a principle that Proverbs teaches and that Solomon helps us understand.

    10:30-10:35

And so again, we have to understand how Solomon writes and what the genre of Proverbs is all about.

    10:36-10:48

But I do, we'll say this, that I believe if you train your child up in the way he should go, that I do believe the majority of time that they're gonna turn out the way that you train them up.

    10:49-10:56

I do believe that, that we take these truths and we do them, but it is still God that has the final say in it all.

    10:57-11:06

But listen, parents, I'm ultimately, I'm gonna raise my kids and I'm gonna parent like it depends upon me.

    11:07-11:18

I know it depends upon God and I put full on Him, but I want to live and I want to parent the best that I can, yes, for God's glory, and because it's all about Him.

    11:19-11:29

So I hope you're ready to take a couple good notes this morning, hope you have your bulletin, have a piece of paper, because I know this, you will walk out with some notes and some truths if you put 'em down and you listen.

    11:29-12:03

Now, it's gonna be your choice listen to him if you want to do him, but I will give you some things today. Jeff told me, he said, Jeremiah, will you give some hows on how to do this? And so I will give you some hows, I will give you some thoughts, and you're gonna have to take them and say, okay God, is this how I'm gonna apply to my life? No, the scripture says we have to do it, and I'm gonna try to give some specific hows on how you can. And I hope that you would take these truths this morning, and you walk out saying, God for your glory, I want to do this. Here's the first thing that I see in this verse, that first part is we're gonna look at train up a "and the way you should go." Here's the first thing, identify the way.

    12:04-12:05

    Identify the way.

    12:06-12:11

I know it's not the first words in the sentence, but I believe it's the most important one to identify first.

    12:11-12:15

For you must know where you're going in order to train someone.

    12:15-12:17

You must know what the goal is.

    12:18-12:22

You must know, okay, this is where I'm heading, this is the direction that I am going.

    12:23-12:29

And I believe this verse is challenging us to choose the way we desire for our kids to walk.

    12:29-12:31

Which way is that going to be?

    12:32-12:34

And that's the question I'd ask you.

    12:34-12:37

What is the way that you want your kids to walk in?

    12:38-12:41

What is the way that you want your grandkids to walk in?

    12:41-12:47

You say, Jeremiah, I mean, we come to church, and yes, we desire our kids to be all about Christ.

    12:47-12:52

We want them to be followers of Christ, and we want that to be important in our family.

    12:52-12:54

We want it to be all about Christ.

    12:55-13:03

But let me ask you, by the demonstration of the way that you parent is following Christ the most important thing in your family.

    13:04-13:12

You know, we live in a world where sports and money and success, a lot of times becomes the way.

    13:14-13:19

But by the demonstration of your life, how do you parent?

    13:20-13:23

How do you, as grandparents, relate to your kids?

    13:24-13:28

My dad, when I was 13, I think, 13 or 14, junior high, I remember listening to him speak.

    13:29-13:30

    And he made this statement.

    13:30-13:36

He said, he did not raise his kids to survive this world, but he raised his kids to change this world.

    13:37-13:43

And I remember thinking about that and looking even at my brothers and looking at how my parents raised us.

    13:43-13:47

And I believe you talk to any of my brothers and my sister.

    13:47-13:54

I have four brothers and sisters, five boys, and I have a little sister who's about 18 years, 16 years younger than I am.

    13:55-13:57

And you talked to us, our desire is to change this world.

    13:59-14:03

And see, my parents, they said, "It's not just to have good kids, "we wanna have godly kids.

    14:04-14:21

"We don't just wanna have kids that kinda go through life "and kinda make it through high school "and hope that they get a job "and they don't mess up too much, "but we wanna raise kids that have a passion "and an obsession for God." So how they parent it and how they grandparent now is not just to have good kids, but to say, "God, we want kids that are godly.

    14:22-14:36

And I have four kids, almost five, and my desire is not just to raise kids who are just gonna go through and survive this world, who are just gonna go through and have a good income and make some money and have a nice little family, but my desire is to have kids that change this world.

    14:37-14:40

And listen, there is a difference to how you raise kids when it comes like that.

    14:41-14:42

There's a difference that it comes to.

    14:43-14:50

And in our minds, we have to identify, okay, what is the way, how are we trying to raise our children, what is it going to look like?

    14:52-14:53

    Identify the way.

    14:53-14:59

Now, once you have identified the way, now look back at the first couple words in that verse, train up a child.

    15:00-15:03

Here's the next thing I see is that's maximize the training.

    15:04-15:05

    Maximize the training.

    15:06-15:07

Here's our job as a parent.

    15:08-15:11

It is what we must do if we want to walk in that way.

    15:11-15:12

    We have to train them.

    15:13-15:15

This, and I know this is not an easy thing.

    15:15-15:16

    Listen, training takes effort.

    15:16-15:22

It has tears and it's pain, But it's the end product that we desire.

    15:22-15:28

Couple years ago, I got some weird idea and decided to do P90X.

    15:28-15:31

And so it was this exercise program.

    15:31-15:32

    It goes for 90 days.

    15:32-15:36

And I said, OK, I'm the type of person, if I start something, I have to finish.

    15:36-15:37

    And so I started.

    15:37-15:38

    And I did pretty good.

    15:39-15:40

I did about five out of the seven days.

    15:41-15:44

When it got to the yoga, I'm just doing these weird things.

    15:44-15:45

That just wasn't me at all.

    15:46-15:48

And so I didn't really-- I kind of skipped that day.

    15:48-15:49

    But I did.

    15:49-15:59

Now the reason why I did that is not because I enjoy getting up early in the morning and putting that DVD and working out for the hour to hour and 15 minutes that it took.

    15:59-16:00

That's not why I enjoy doing it.

    16:01-16:05

What I enjoy doing it because what they told me I would look like at the end, that's why I did it.

    16:06-16:09

I didn't look like that, I don't know what happened, I'm suing the company, but no kidding.

    16:10-16:13

But that's why I did it 'cause there's the end product I was looking for.

    16:14-16:16

And the whole thing, that's with the parenting.

    16:17-16:18

It's gonna be hard at times.

    16:18-16:23

It's gonna take some, it's difficult walking through those steps and walking through those years.

    16:24-16:26

But it's the end product that we desire.

    16:27-16:30

And for them to walk in the way.

    16:30-16:34

You know, there's a truth that we see in this verse and I believe we see through the scriptures.

    16:34-16:36

From Genesis to Revelation, you'll find it.

    16:36-16:40

And it's most clearly the verse in Galatians 6 says it.

    16:41-16:51

Says this, "What you sow, you will reap." And listen, I believe what you put into your children and what you put into your grandkids is what you're gonna get out.

    16:52-16:54

What you sow is what you're gonna reap.

    16:58-16:59

I'm not a very good cook.

    17:00-17:06

About a couple of years, when I was in high school, I was sitting down one day and none of my friends could play and I was sitting there going, I wanna do something.

    17:06-17:09

And I remember looking in the kitchen going, I'm gonna make some cookies.

    17:09-17:10

You know how hard can it be?

    17:11-17:13

You know, my mom, I've helped my mom before.

    17:13-17:14

This is not a big deal, make some cookies.

    17:15-17:18

And so no one was home except me, which was a bad mistake.

    17:18-17:32

And so I walked in the kitchen, and I pulled out one cookbook, and I pulled out another cookbook, Betty Crocker, and I was like, "Yeah, I'm gonna compare recipes, "and see which one, and kind of see what it looks like." And so I started to walk down these two recipes, and they were pretty much the same.

    17:32-17:35

I had the flour, and so on and so forth.

    17:35-17:40

And I got about halfway down, and one recipe called for Crisco, and one recipe called for butter.

    17:41-17:43

I was like, "Crisco, it's above the sink.

    17:43-17:46

"Butter's in the refrigerator." I said, "They're two different things.

    17:46-17:50

"Well, I'll just put both of 'em in." And so I put a whole thing of Crisco in, a whole thing of butter in.

    17:50-17:55

And I continued down, walked the whole recipe, and at the end, I tasted the batter, and it was incredible.

    17:56-18:03

And I was like, "Yeah, these are gonna be "some good cookies." I mean, it was sweet, and I was like, "Yeah." Well, I didn't read the paragraph at the end.

    18:03-18:04

I still don't understand why cookbooks do that.

    18:05-18:08

They give you the recipe, then they give you the paragraph that tells you how to preheat the oven.

    18:08-18:11

I was like, "That should always be before." But I finally read the paragraph at the end.

    18:11-18:13

It said to preheat the oven at 350.

    18:13-18:14

I was like, "Man, I don't have time.

    18:14-18:19

"I'm ready to in the oven on 350, I was like, well, I'll just put a couple in and we'll see what happens.

    18:19-18:24

So I put two cookies and I stuck them in and I think they were supposed to go for like 13 to 18 minutes, something like that.

    18:24-18:27

And I was like, well, I'll leave a little bit longer 'cause I didn't preheat the oven.

    18:27-18:34

Well, I walked to my bedroom and I came back and about 10 minutes later, 'cause I was just excited to see how my cookies were gonna taste.

    18:35-18:41

And I walked in and I pulled it down and looked at 'em and they were burnt to a crisp.

    18:42-18:42

    I said, what?

    18:43-18:45

I said, I only left 'em in for 10 minutes.

    18:45-18:51

And so I pulled those out and I took two more cookies and I stuck 'em in and within five minutes they were burnt.

    18:52-18:57

I was like, "This is impossible." And so I pulled those out, took two more cookies, stuck it in, and put it in the oven.

    18:58-19:12

And no joke, within one minute my cookies were burnt because you could look at 'em and flick 'em and they'd go (imitates explosion) and I was like, "What is going on here?" And so I called up a friend of mine, which that was probably a mistake too 'cause she has not let me live it down to this day.

    19:12-19:18

And I called up and said, "Okay, listen." I knew she was a good cook kind of like our youth pastor's wife, and I said, "What's going on?

    19:18-19:26

"I'm trying to make these cookies, "they didn't work out." And she said, "What'd you put in it?" And so I kind of walked down the thing, and she said, "Whoa," and I said, "Crisco and butter." She said, "Whoa, Jeremiah, what do you mean?

    19:26-19:33

"You put Crisco and butter in?" I said, "Yeah, they're not the same." Well, after she stopped laughing for a little bit, then she said, "Jeremiah, you can't do that.

    19:33-19:39

"You either gotta put one or the other, "or put just half of it." And what happens when I put in, they just fried.

    19:40-19:41

    Now, here's what I learned.

    19:41-19:45

Number one is that Jeremiah doesn't know how to cook, and Jeremiah needs to stay out of the kitchen.

    19:45-19:46

And that's why I married my wife.

    19:46-19:49

She's an incredible cook and makes incredible chocolate chip cookies.

    19:49-19:49

So I just let her do it.

    19:50-19:54

But here's the second thing I learned, is what you put into something is what you're gonna get out of it.

    19:55-19:59

You know, I put the wrong stuff in, and so my cookies did not turn out too well.

    20:00-20:03

And what you put, I believe that's what this verse is really saying.

    20:04-20:09

You train up a child in the way he should go, what you put in, and when he is old, he will not depart.

    20:10-20:11

That's what you're gonna get out.

    20:12-20:16

And so it's important that we understand, Okay, we need to train our children.

    20:17-20:19

And I believe there's two important ways to train.

    20:20-20:23

One is discipling them, and one is disciplining them.

    20:24-20:26

Let's look at these two things here real quick.

    20:26-20:28

Well, and let's start with discipling.

    20:29-20:29

    What's it mean?

    20:29-20:32

If I'm gonna train my child, I believe you're gonna disciple your child.

    20:33-20:35

Disciple, and it means to follow.

    20:35-20:37

Listen, really, kids are just followers.

    20:38-20:42

And they're either gonna follow you, or they're gonna follow this world.

    20:42-20:46

They're either gonna follow what the TV says, or they're gonna follow what their friends say.

    20:47-20:51

They're gonna follow what the internet says, or they're gonna follow you.

    20:52-20:58

Your teenagers are gonna be discipled, and your kids are gonna be discipled by someone or something.

    20:59-21:03

And I don't know about you, but I wanna be the one doing that.

    21:03-21:05

Because I don't trust this world.

    21:06-21:12

And if I have a way that I want my child to walk, then I want to be the one discipling my child.

    21:13-21:14

    Now, let me say this.

    21:14-21:17

I do believe that discipling never ends.

    21:18-21:20

The discipline, which we'll talk about soon, it will end someday.

    21:21-21:29

Someday as they get older, you basically turn the discipline that you are called to do according to Proverbs, and you're gonna turn it over to God, and he's gonna be the one disciplining them.

    21:29-21:32

So I believe there's a point where discipline as a parent does end.

    21:33-21:35

But the discipling, it doesn't end.

    21:35-21:38

And I don't care if you're 60 here, you're still a disciple of your kids.

    21:39-21:41

And if you have, how many have grandkids here?

    21:41-21:42

    If you have grandkids, great.

    21:43-21:50

I believe one of your responsibilities, I'll look at a verse here just in a second on that, but one of your responsibilities is to disciple your grandkids.

    21:50-21:53

    And so discipling never ends.

    21:53-21:58

Now, one of my favorite verses on discipling, and I'm gonna stay in Proverbs the rest of the time, I promise, Jeff, okay?

    21:58-22:01

But just for this one, because anytime I talk about training kids, I love this verse.

    22:01-22:03

So flip over with me to Deuteronomy chapter six.

    22:04-22:15

Just Deuteronomy chapter six, we're gonna come back, you can keep your finger in Proverbs, we're gonna come right back over to Proverbs, but there's a verse here in Deuteronomy chapter six, couple verses here, there's some of my favorite verses when it comes to discipling.

    22:16-22:21

Let me read it to you, it says, in Deuteronomy chapter six, look at verse five.

    22:22-22:25

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind.

    22:26-22:29

And these words I command you today shall be on your heart.

    22:29-22:31

You shall teach them diligently to your children.

    22:31-22:32

    Here it is.

    22:32-22:43

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up." What's he saying here?

    22:44-22:48

He's saying that every area of your life, you're going to disciple your kids.

    22:49-22:56

And if we, in Deuteronomy chapter 4, verse 9, it says to teach these things to your children, and to your children's children.

    22:57-22:58

So that puts you in this, grandparents.

    23:00-23:08

Not only are you supposed to teach your children the great things that God has done as a discipler, but also to your children and to their children.

    23:08-23:09

    So, how?

    23:09-23:12

Jeff asked me to give some thoughts on how do you do that.

    23:12-23:14

    So here's Discipling 101, okay?

    23:14-23:17

So it's a right to me say, how do you teach your children?

    23:17-23:19

Well, I'm gonna grab some from this verse and some from Proverbs.

    23:20-23:21

    And first of all, intentionally.

    23:22-23:23

    Intentionally.

    23:23-23:32

It says here in this verse, you shall teach them diligently, that's a good word right there, diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house.

    23:33-23:34

    I believe it's intentionally.

    23:34-23:36

I'm sitting down talking with my kids.

    23:36-23:38

    This is an intentional discipleship.

    23:39-23:41

Solomon, the book of Proverbs, what is he doing?

    23:41-23:47

He was intentionally discipling his kids by writing a book to them saying, listen, this is how you need to live.

    23:48-23:49

So let me ask you a question.

    23:49-23:53

How are you intentionally teaching your kids and your grandkids right now?

    23:54-23:59

What are you doing to intentionally teach your kids about who God is?

    23:59-24:03

You see, we wanna get as much of God on their mental grid as we possibly can.

    24:04-24:05

    So what are you doing?

    24:06-24:18

And besides bringing them to church, you say, "Jeremiah, take them to church every Sunday." Okay, besides bringing them to church, what are you doing as a parent, as a grandparent to intentionally teach your kids about who God is and about the way we want them to walk?

    24:19-24:26

I remember some years ago, I was sitting down, I was like, "What do I want my kids to know "when they graduate at 18?" I said, "There are four things "I really want my kids to know.

    24:26-24:28

"One, I want them to know who God is.

    24:28-24:29

"I can't force them to know God.

    24:29-24:30

    "I can't do that.

    24:30-24:36

to force your kids, your grandkids to know God, but I can teach them who God is, and I can make sure they know who God is.

    24:37-24:39

I said I want them to know I'm obedience.

    24:39-24:41

I want by the time they're 18, they know what it means to obey.

    24:42-24:43

    And that's an important lesson.

    24:44-24:45

I want them to know their gender.

    24:45-24:48

I want them to know what it means to be a girl, what it means to be a boy.

    24:49-24:51

Our society is starting to blur those lines a little bit.

    24:51-24:53

I wanna make sure they understand that.

    24:53-24:55

And then I want them to know that I love them.

    24:56-24:57

Without a shadow of a doubt, I love them.

    24:58-25:06

Now, and so my question, I'd ask myself, "Kid, Jeremiah, what are you gonna do "to intentionally teach your kids these things?" And there are different things that we do.

    25:06-25:09

You know, I'll sit down with my kids, and we'll kind of do like these catechism type things.

    25:09-25:10

    We're all asking questions.

    25:11-25:17

One of the first things I asked them was, you know, "Why do we live, and how do we answer back, "you know, for the glory of God?" And so I've teached my kids that.

    25:17-25:19

I've asked them, you know, "Man is a," and they'll say, "Sinner.

    25:19-25:29

"We are saved by," and they'll say, "Grace." And I'll say, "What's the most important thing in life?" And they'll say, "Love God and love people." I'll say, and rose again.

    25:29-25:32

I'll ask Had, and he's a little bit older, I'll ask him, what's it mean to be justified?

    25:33-25:34

    And he says, declare righteous.

    25:34-25:38

What's it mean to be sanctified to live with Jesus, becoming like Christ?

    25:38-25:41

What's it mean to be glorified to live with Jesus?

    25:42-25:45

Listen, does Hadden understand what it really means to be justified?

    25:45-25:45

    No.

    25:46-25:56

This is what I do want, that someday when he opens the word of God up and he reads Romans three or Romans five and it says that he's been justified, I want him to go, you know what?

    25:56-25:57

    I know what that means.

    25:57-25:59

That means I've been declared righteous.

    26:00-26:04

You see, right now I wanna get as much as I can in their mental grid, intentionally.

    26:05-26:07

Maybe it's sitting down and just having family devotions with them.

    26:08-26:10

My wife goes through and teaches my kids different verses.

    26:12-26:13

    Intentionally, I wanna do that.

    26:13-26:15

How are you doing that with your teenagers?

    26:15-26:20

How are you intentionally getting God, getting the way that you want them to walk in their mental grid?

    26:20-26:27

Listen, if you don't, but you take them to sports practice three or four times a week, Listen, that's intentionally what you're teaching them.

    26:28-26:31

And then we sit there and we say, I don't understand why my kid walked the wrong way.

    26:31-26:33

Well, what are you intentionally doing with your children?

    26:34-26:35

Because that's what your children are gonna follow.

    26:36-26:37

That's the way that they're gonna identify.

    26:37-26:46

Even though you can say we want God to be first and we want to, but what are you doing to intentionally teach your children the way that you want them to walk?

    26:46-26:49

Intentionally, here's another thing that I see in this passage is spontaneously.

    26:50-26:51

I mean, look at the next part.

    26:51-26:59

It says you should talk when you sit in your house, And when you walk by the way, I believe even as you walk, take every effort to point your family to Christ.

    27:00-27:03

Everything that you do, just as you're walking around, to point them towards Christ.

    27:04-27:08

Listen, you can learn a lot of life lessons just going to Walmart, okay?

    27:09-27:14

I have taught my kids numerous things, not purposely, but just spontaneously as we walk through Walmart.

    27:14-27:15

I mean, even like, we went the other day.

    27:16-27:19

But there were, yesterday, but I'll tell you this story first.

    27:19-27:21

I went the other, it was probably a couple years ago.

    27:21-27:24

We were walking down Walmart and my wife enjoys it when we all go to Walmart together.

    27:25-27:25

    Grocery shopping.

    27:26-27:29

I don't know why, but she likes it when we're all there.

    27:29-27:32

So what happens usually is she's grocery shopping and I'm kind of pushing the kids around trying to keep them occupied.

    27:33-27:39

And so we're walking down this aisle one time and about the other end of the aisle, there was this mom and son just going at it.

    27:39-27:41

And the son was yelling at the mom, the mom was yelling at the kid.

    27:41-27:48

And Karis, I think she was about three at this time, she looked at me and she said, "Daddy, I shouldn't act like that, should I?" I stopped everything right there.

    27:49-27:50

    I said, "That's right, Karis.

    27:51-27:52

We don't act like that, do we?

    27:52-27:53

I said, how do we act?

    27:53-27:56

And listen, we had a great opportunity to talk right then.

    27:57-28:01

And just of, hey, listen, I didn't plan that, but it was great, she identified that.

    28:01-28:03

And spontaneously, I had a great teaching moment.

    28:04-28:07

And we'll walk through Walmart, and now my kids are like, we shouldn't act like that.

    28:07-28:09

So we're down, I'm like, shh, don't talk so loud.

    28:09-28:10

    But they'll learn.

    28:11-28:17

Last night, we were in Walmart, some kid was yelling and screaming, and it was a great time to sit there and tell my kids, we don't act like that, do we?

    28:18-28:19

No, and they look and they can see that.

    28:19-28:23

I don't want to act like that. Why harm I? Why do I do that?

    28:24-28:38

Spontaneously, I remember we were in the mall one time and Karras, I was with Karras and Hatton, just had two kids at this time, and my wife was in a shop and I was in that middle section where all the men sit, and I was sitting there and there's a flower next to me. So I was like, you know, I'm gonna teach my child something.

    28:38-29:01

So I said, "Karras, come here." I said, "Karras, who made this plant?" And she looked at me and said, "God did." I said, "That's right, Karras." And then she looked at me and said, "Daddy, how did God make that plant?" I said, "Go play with Hatton." Yeah, but in every way, as you're walking outside, this carousel the other day, I said, "God, man, isn't that a beautiful sky, Daddy?" And I said, "Carousel, who made the sky?" Point them towards Christ.

    29:02-29:09

Spontaneously, you have teenagers, sit down, you're watching the news or watching something on TV, and something comes up that would be against the scriptures.

    29:10-29:13

You know, what a great time to stop and say, "Listen, what does the Bible say about that?

    29:14-29:20

"What does the word of God say about that?" You didn't plan it, but just spontaneously getting much of this book.

    29:21-29:26

You're a teenager, you go to a movie, come back and sit with them for a second, take five minutes and say, "Okay, let me ask you a question.

    29:26-29:31

What in that movie was against the Scriptures?" Not that you can't go to the movie, but what in that movie was against the Scriptures?

    29:31-29:37

Because I want to make sure that you have a biblical view of what has happened in this world, a biblical view of what is going on.

    29:38-29:39

    That's just spontaneously.

    29:39-29:43

Just spontaneously as you walk along the way, teaching them about God.

    29:43-29:47

Here's another one, exemplary, exemplary, did I say that right?

    29:47-29:48

I can spell it, it's right there.

    29:49-29:51

Verse five, look at verse five here.

    29:52-30:00

It says, "You shall love the Lord your God "with all your heart, with all your soul, "with all your mind." Listen, before I believe you can teach, you must make sure you praxonate yourself.

    30:02-30:09

I believe that one of the reasons why my five siblings and myself are seeking after God today is because we saw my parents live it.

    30:09-30:16

My dad, most pastor's kids, most, as they grow up, Man, they can't wait to get out of the church.

    30:17-30:24

The reason why I believe that we do, because my dad would come up and preach something on Sunday and through the week, and then he'd live it behind the doors of our home.

    30:25-30:25

    And my mom did too.

    30:27-30:28

    You be the example.

    30:28-30:32

Listen, the best example for your kids and your grandkids is not the church.

    30:33-30:38

Now, hopefully there are people in here that are gonna be example, that the best example they have is you.

    30:38-30:40

Listen, you want your kids to be a prayer warrior?

    30:40-30:41

    You be a prayer warrior.

    30:42-30:45

You want your kids to be pure, you be pure.

    30:45-30:49

You want your kids to have a love for this book right here, then you have a love for the book.

    30:50-30:57

You want your kids to follow after Christ, then you show them what it means to have a passion and an obsession for Christ.

    30:58-31:00

You be the example for them.

    31:00-31:05

You set the tone for them of what it should look like.

    31:06-31:08

    Here's the next one, consistently.

    31:09-31:14

It says in the last part of that verse, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, when you rise up.

    31:14-31:20

I believe even Solomon, as he walks through the Proverbs, I don't think that was just a one time that he taught that wisdom to his children.

    31:21-31:23

I think it was over a period of time.

    31:24-31:25

    Consistently teach them.

    31:25-31:27

And listen, parenting is not for wimps.

    31:28-31:31

And consistency is one of the toughest things for me.

    31:31-31:32

I'll be the first to admit it.

    31:32-31:35

Some days I do a lot better than some days I do a lot worse.

    31:35-31:37

But we need to be consistent.

    31:38-31:40

And a couple ways that we try.

    31:40-31:46

One way that helps me be consistent is I have to nail down a specific time when I'm going to do something.

    31:46-31:47

It has to be a habit.

    31:48-31:51

And so one of the habits we have in our family is before we go to bed each night, I pray with my kids.

    31:52-31:54

That's just a habit that we do.

    31:54-31:55

My dad did it to me, that's how I learned it.

    31:56-31:58

My mom and dad, my dad every night before I went to bed, he'd come pray with us.

    31:58-32:00

And so every night before I go to bed, I pray with my children.

    32:00-32:03

And I would say 98% of the time we do that.

    32:04-32:07

Because I know, and I'll tell you, 100% of the time I think about it.

    32:07-32:11

There's sometimes, you know, they're already asleep or something else, may walk in the room, pray over 'em.

    32:11-32:13

But I pray with my kids every night.

    32:13-32:15

We take turns, we go around, and we pray.

    32:15-32:16

    Family devotions, another thing.

    32:17-32:22

You say, "Well, we'll kinda try to get to it this week." Unless you have a consistent time when you're doing it, it's not gonna happen.

    32:22-32:23

It has to be a habit.

    32:25-32:26

    And consistency's important.

    32:26-32:33

And I know some people get scared of family devotions and they think, "Listen, you come and watch "our family devotions, you'll think "nothing happens during it." And it's true.

    32:33-32:35

I mean, I have four kids, eight and under.

    32:35-32:42

If we can sit for five minutes without someone hitting somebody or someone screaming or something, then that's a miracle right there.

    32:42-32:47

And so, and that's about all, our family devotions literally last between five and seven minutes most of the time.

    32:48-32:49

But you know what I'm showing them?

    32:49-32:52

Is the consistency that God is important in our family.

    32:52-32:53

And this is what we do.

    32:54-32:55

And we do it every night, we do it at night.

    32:56-33:01

Every once in a while we'll do it at supper time, but I always know if we're gonna bed, that's the me time, that we'll get together.

    33:01-33:04

And I know when your kids get older, it gets tougher and how that works.

    33:04-33:09

And maybe it's just, you can say, "We're gonna insist to do it three times a week "and we're gonna do it this time." but make it a consistent time.

    33:10-33:13

Because otherwise it's gonna be a hit and miss, the habit that is there.

    33:13-33:16

Consistency, and then the last one there is creatively.

    33:17-33:20

I believe Solomon even demonstrated that to us here in Proverbs.

    33:20-33:23

I mean, he gives word pictures to his kids, he gives daily life lessons.

    33:24-33:25

Say, Jeremiah, I'm not a creative person.

    33:25-33:26

    Well, then ask somebody.

    33:27-33:28

Say, hey, I need some help.

    33:28-33:31

How do I do this in a way that my kids maybe enjoy a little more?

    33:31-33:32

    I need some creativity here.

    33:33-33:33

    And ask.

    33:35-33:37

But discipling them is so important.

    33:37-33:39

Let me quickly go on to this next thing.

    33:39-33:41

What do we disciple them in?

    33:42-33:50

Well, I believe Proverbs is full of truths that you can pull out, but let me give you some key ones that I'm trying to do with my kids, and I hope that you will try as we look at Proverbs here.

    33:50-33:53

One thing you can disciple your kids in is just the whole area of money.

    33:53-33:56

I mean, Proverbs has numerous verses on money.

    33:56-34:09

Proverbs 13, 11, it says, "Dishonest money dwindles away, "but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow." Proverbs 23, four, "Do not wear yourself out to get rich, but have the wisdom to show restraint.

    34:10-34:11

You need to teach your kids about money.

    34:12-34:16

Listen, if you don't, then the world's gonna teach 'em, and I don't want the world teaching them what money is.

    34:17-34:19

I wanna teach 'em what money's about.

    34:19-34:26

And I'm trying my kids right now to teach 'em when they get money, not just to spend it all, but to save some, and to give some, and to spend some.

    34:27-34:30

And so teaching your kids about money is important right now.

    34:30-34:32

    Here's another one, purity.

    34:32-34:33

    Proverbs chapter seven.

    34:34-34:36

As we know the passage, as the adulterous woman.

    34:37-34:39

But listen, the man was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    34:40-34:44

And there's lessons that you can teach your child, your son, about not being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    34:45-34:48

And there are lessons you can teach your daughter about not being like the adulterous woman.

    34:48-34:54

And that's just one passage, but all through Proverbs, he talks about purity and the importance of what it is to be pure.

    34:54-34:57

Listen, you need to teach your kids what it means to be pure.

    34:57-34:59

You need to ask your kids, are they being pure?

    35:00-35:01

    Don't just expect it.

    35:01-35:06

My parents tried at an early age to kind of help us out in this whole area of purity.

    35:07-35:14

When Steven was like four or five or something like that, he was in a club, a kids club, and some little girl was going on a kissing rampage.

    35:14-35:29

And so my dad started to talk to him, said, "Steven, listen, if you don't kiss a girl "until you're married, I'll give you $5,000." And, you know, that kind of meant nothing really as much as a six-year-old, but he told all of us that at seven, eight years old, that if we didn't kiss a girl until we were getting married, he'd give us $5,000.

    35:30-35:33

My wife and I got married 10 years ago, almost 10 years ago this year.

    35:33-35:37

And the first time I ever kissed my wife on the lips was on our marriage day.

    35:37-35:47

And I went through high school, I went through college, and I told friends in college that, or in high school, and they'd be like, "What, are you crazy?" But listen, I knew what I wanted.

    35:47-35:53

I knew what I needed in a wife, with the word of God said, and I didn't have to kiss a hundred different girls to figure that out.

    35:54-35:59

And it was such an honor to be able to stand before my wife on my wedding day and say, "Listen, you were the first person I ever kissed.

    36:00-36:01

    "I have no scars.

    36:01-36:06

I have nothing to look in the past and go, yeah, I did it with that person, I did it with that person, I did it with that person.

    36:06-36:09

No, I could look at it, I don't look back and regret that at all.

    36:09-36:11

I have the rest of my life to make out with my wife.

    36:12-36:14

And we've made up for all the years that I've missed.

    36:16-36:18

And so I don't look back and regret that at all.

    36:20-36:22

But I'll tell you, there's a lot of people who look back and regret what they did.

    36:22-36:28

And what my parents did was this, they knew if we didn't, it's not wrong to kiss before you get married, don't get me wrong, at least in and of itself.

    36:30-36:33

But what my parents knew, If we didn't kiss before we got married, we probably weren't gonna jump in bed before.

    36:34-36:36

And so they went after our purity.

    36:37-36:48

And they said, "Listen, let's challenge you to be pure." My dad in high school would ask me, "How are you doing, Jeremiah, in your purity, in your thought life?" You know, I challenge you, dads, if you have teenagers, you need to ask your boys how they're doing morally.

    36:49-36:52

And I'm not saying it's always a fun conversation, but it needs to be asked.

    36:54-36:59

Because if you're not, then every teenager, every teenage boy, every teenage girl is struggling with it.

    37:01-37:04

And I want to have that relationship with my kids that I can ask them that.

    37:05-37:07

And listen, if you're going to ask them, you've got to be honest how you're doing too.

    37:08-37:12

And I would ask my dad, I'd say, "Dad, how are you doing?" He'd have to be, "I'm a pastor." And he'd have to tell me.

    37:12-37:15

And we'd keep each other accountable in this whole area of morals.

    37:16-37:19

And listen, that's what Solomon was doing here in Proverbs.

    37:20-37:20

    Purity.

    37:21-37:25

Don't just say, "Well, I hope they make it." Listen, two out of every three high school students do not graduate as virgins.

    37:26-37:29

If you just hope they make it, they're probably going to fall into that stat.

    37:29-37:30

    Don't let that.

    37:31-37:33

    Be proactive on that purity.

    37:34-37:36

Even as a grandparent, you can be, I mean, you can challenge your grandkid.

    37:36-37:47

"Man, Doug, you don't kiss someone to your mirror, I'll give you 5,000 bucks." "Maybe you say a thousand, you know, I don't know." And again, it's not that, it's just, let's challenge our children in this area of what it means to be pure.

    37:48-37:49

Here's another one, just to fear the Lord.

    37:50-37:52

Fourteen times in the book of Proverbs, it talks about fearing the Lord.

    37:53-37:57

Proverbs 1:7, "Fear the Lord is the beginning of knowledge." What does it mean to fear the Lord?

    37:57-38:29

The fear of the Lord is to have the continual awareness that I am always in God's presence and that everything that I'm doing is being Judged by God. Listen, we need to teach our teenagers that. Yes, we need to teach our teenagers that God is love And we didn't teach our children that God is love But we also need to help them understand that everything that they do is being judged by God That is to have the fear of the Lord There's another one working hard Proverbs 6 We need to teach our children how to work hard.

    38:29-38:35

I remember as a youth pastor, we'd have work days at our church, and I could tell which parents taught their kids how to work hard and which parents didn't.

    38:36-38:39

Because some of the kids that knew how to work hard, they would work hard.

    38:39-38:41

And I'm trying to teach my kids that right now.

    38:42-38:45

My kids yesterday with my wife, they went outside and they cleaned the van.

    38:46-38:51

And some of them, Kara, she thought picking up toys and taking them up to the, into the house was too hard.

    38:52-38:53

And we had a long talk.

    38:53-38:56

It's amazing, I'm going through this right here, And God gave me tons of lessons yesterday.

    38:58-39:02

And what I can do, okay, listen, dear, let me tell you what the Bible says about working hard.

    39:03-39:05

I want my kids to understand what it means about working hard.

    39:05-39:06

Friends would be the next one.

    39:07-39:08

    Or honesty, excuse me, honesty.

    39:09-39:10

Teach them what it means to be honest.

    39:10-39:16

Proverbs 12, 17, "So whoever speaks the truth "gives honest evidence." Listen, we need to teach our kids what it means to be honest.

    39:16-39:17

    Here's the next one quickly.

    39:17-39:26

Friends, Proverbs 13, 20 says, "Walk with the wise, you'll be wise, "but the companion of fools will be destroyed." Listen, wrong friends will destroy your kids maybe quicker than anything.

    39:28-39:30

Teach your kids what it means to have the right friends.

    39:31-39:38

I challenge you if you have kids in high school to sit your kids down and say, write out your top five friends and let them write it out.

    39:39-39:41

And then take this verse right here, Proverbs 13 20.

    39:42-39:47

You can also take down First Corinthians 15 33 and also Psalms one.

    39:47-39:56

And all those First Corinthians 15 33 says, "Bad company corrupts good morals." And just say, okay, the kids that you're hanging out with, what are they like?

    39:56-39:57

    Let's talk about them.

    39:57-40:00

And then ask them, should you hang out with them because you're gonna be like them.

    40:00-40:02

That's the word of God says.

    40:02-40:06

You walk with the wise, you're gonna be wise, but to hang out with fools, you're gonna be a fool.

    40:06-40:07

And teenagers, I tell you, it's gonna happen.

    40:08-40:10

Who you hang out with is who you're gonna become like.

    40:10-40:12

    Bad company corrupts good morals.

    40:12-40:16

And it's a great exercise just to walk through with your teenagers and say, listen, do you wanna be like them?

    40:16-40:18

It's not even you preaching at them.

    40:18-40:20

Sometimes you start preaching at your teenagers, they're gonna turn you off real quick.

    40:21-40:23

But if you say, okay, listen, here's what the word of God says.

    40:24-40:26

You said this person acts like that.

    40:27-40:27

Do you wanna be like that?

    40:28-40:29

If they say, well, no, not really.

    40:30-40:31

And the question is, should you hang out with that person?

    40:33-40:34

    Just go to the scriptures.

    40:34-40:35

    Let the scriptures challenge them.

    40:36-40:44

So friends, listen, train is tough and it takes a lot of work and it's hard to do, but we are our children's discipler.

    40:45-40:46

So are you discipling your kids?

    40:48-40:50

Train up your child, disciple them.

    40:50-40:51

Here's the other way you train.

    40:51-40:53

We'll quickly go through this disciplining.

    40:53-40:57

The first question that we must ask when it comes to discipline is why do we discipline?

    40:57-40:59

Well, first of all, because it shows that we love them.

    41:00-41:09

Proverbs 13, 24 says, "Whoever spares the rod "hates his son, but he who loves him "is diligent to discipline him." Listen, if you love your kids, then you will discipline them.

    41:10-41:13

It shows that we love them, and then secondly, it pictures Christ.

    41:13-41:18

Proverbs 3, 11 and 12 says this, "My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline.

    41:19-41:29

"The Lord reproves him whom he loves." "the Father, the Son whom he delights." Listen, the example of why we discipline our children is because God disciplines us.

    41:29-41:31

And so we're picturing that for our kids.

    41:31-41:40

I believe I understand the discipline of God in a greater way because of how my kids disciplined me, how my parents disciplined me.

    41:41-41:51

And a lot of parents, a lot of parents or a lot of teenagers do not understand God's discipline because their parents didn't do it in the correct way.

    41:51-41:57

And it's so important that we understand what it means to discipline our children.

    41:58-42:05

Now, let me ask you, how many of you ever sat in a class or sat at a time with a message where someone showed you steps of how to discipline your kids?

    42:07-42:07

    No one?

    42:07-42:08

    Maybe one, okay.

    42:08-42:09

I think one or two, three.

    42:11-42:16

Now, I believe it is so important that we understand the correct way of how to discipline.

    42:17-42:18

    And it does.

    42:18-42:36

I've spoken with my dad on family stuff all across America, and most people said this, "I've never been taught." And so most just kind of have to figure out themselves, and then they realize that maybe they did it wrong when they look back, or they're saying, "I don't, it's not working." Now, let me give you a couple things, I believe, on how you can discipline your children.

    42:36-42:38

And again, I learned this 'cause this is how my dad did it to us.

    42:39-42:42

And if you look at the track records, he has six kids that I believe are following after Christ.

    42:43-42:43

    I think he did right.

    42:43-42:44

That's what I'm trying to do with my kids.

    42:45-42:46

    And here's a couple things.

    42:46-42:52

I believe when your son does something, or your daughter does something that is wrong, here's some steps I do.

    42:52-42:53

First of all is the confrontation.

    42:54-42:54

    So important.

    42:55-42:57

Don't let them think they can get away with anything.

    42:58-43:02

Listen, I understand when you're out in public, sometimes you're not gonna be able to do more than just this.

    43:02-43:13

But even in public, when my kids don't do what they're supposed to do, I try to look 'em in the eye and explain to them, confront them and say, "Listen, that is not how we act." I wanna identify every time they're doing something they shouldn't.

    43:14-43:16

And so the confrontation is there.

    43:16-43:19

Now if you're at home or you're in a place, then the next thing is reflection.

    43:19-43:22

And that is to send them to their room or send them to your room.

    43:22-43:23

Sometimes you send them to their room, they just come play with toys.

    43:24-43:26

And so send them to your room, that's what we had to do.

    43:26-43:27

We had to go sit in my dad's bed.

    43:27-43:28

And we had to sit there.

    43:28-43:31

What happened is I knew dad was coming up in a minute or two and I had to think about what I just did.

    43:32-43:38

And the other thing that does is it gives you as a parent the opportunity to make sure you're coming up in the right way and doing the discipline in the correct way.

    43:39-43:45

A lot of times when we discipline as parents, you know, they do something wrong and we're in the flesh and we're kind of angry and we discipline right then.

    43:45-43:46

Well, that's not how it's supposed to be.

    43:47-43:49

And we've done wrong when we discipline anger.

    43:50-43:57

And so give some time to cool down, make sure that you're in the spirit, and then you walk up to your children and you walk up to your child.

    43:57-43:59

Here's the next thing, isn't it confession?

    43:59-44:08

Ask your kids, ask your child right there, say, "What did you do that was wrong?" And we did this yesterday, numerous times.

    44:08-44:11

And so I had a great opportunity to walk through this.

    44:11-44:17

And I looked at my child, Karis, I said, "Karis, what did you do that was wrong?" Why?

    44:17-44:19

Because I want her to identify what she did.

    44:20-44:25

If you just spank your kid, and they're like, "Oh, what was that for?" Well, then you didn't hit, you didn't, it didn't get right.

    44:25-44:26

    They didn't get the point.

    44:27-44:31

So I said, "Okay, what did you do that was wrong?" Well, I hit my brother.

    44:31-44:35

Well, it had, and he's at this point, where sometimes he'd be like, "Well, I think I," I go, "No, I don't want to think.

    44:36-44:40

"What did you do that was wrong?" "Well, I might have." "Nope, no mights either, okay?

    44:41-44:46

"What did you do that was wrong?" to identify what they did was wrong, and a confession.

    44:46-44:49

And then secondly, a verbal correction.

    44:49-44:50

Talk to them about it for a second.

    44:50-44:51

    Say, "Listen, that's a sin.

    44:51-44:53

"Here's what the word of God says.

    44:53-44:55

"The Bible says to obey your parents.

    44:55-44:57

"Mom told you to do that, you didn't obey.

    44:57-44:58

    "That's wrong.

    44:58-45:01

"The Bible says to be kind one to another." That's a verse that we talk about all the time.

    45:01-45:02

    Be kind one to another.

    45:03-45:04

You know, you hit your brother.

    45:04-45:10

The Bible says, "Be kind to one another." And so verbally correct them and show them, okay, this is wrong that you do.

    45:10-45:13

And that's the second one there would be the scripture confirmation.

    45:14-45:17

And our next fifth one, scripture confirmation.

    45:17-45:19

And just show 'em a verse.

    45:19-45:20

Listen, this is what the verse says.

    45:21-45:22

    Be kind one to another.

    45:23-45:26

And then the sixth one there is what I'll call pointed correction.

    45:27-45:40

And that, I believe, according to the scriptures, and we see five times in the book of Proverbs where he says, "Don't spare the rod." And I believe the rod there is a stick.

    45:40-45:48

And I know this can be debated, And I know out here, some say, "No, I never spank my kids." I believe scripture, the Covenant of Proverbs, we see that.

    45:48-45:53

Now, I believe when you approve with the rod, it should be done firmly and quickly and accurately.

    45:54-45:58

This isn't where, you know, some kid does something, you start swatting him 17,000 times.

    45:59-45:59

    I don't believe that.

    46:00-46:04

If it's done correctly, I believe it can be very beneficial.

    46:05-46:11

And again, you've already walked through five steps before you got to just getting the rod out starting to spank your child.

    46:12-46:13

Now here's what my parents used to do.

    46:13-46:20

They would go through this whole step, and then my dad, he would be on the bed, he would sit on the bed, and he'd use like a dowel rod.

    46:21-46:30

And so he would, he'd put his hand on the bed, and we would put our hands on his hand, and then we'd put our forehead down on the bed.

    46:30-46:32

And this got us in a great position to be spanked.

    46:34-46:37

And God gave a great place right here to be spanked.

    46:37-46:39

This isn't to beat your kid.

    46:39-46:40

And this is what my parents are doing.

    46:40-46:44

What we do with our kid, there's one strike for every offense.

    46:45-46:47

So I don't sit there and hit my kid 17 times.

    46:48-46:52

I do it one time and all it is to say, listen, what you did was wrong.

    46:52-46:56

Now, the velocity changes depending on the offense that took place.

    46:57-46:59

But it is done in the correct way.

    47:00-47:03

It is done, I believe, how Proverbs says, listen, don't spare the rod.

    47:03-47:04

You spare the rod, you hate your child.

    47:05-47:06

So the book of Proverbs says.

    47:06-47:12

I do it one time and I pick 'em up and here's the next thing after that is restoration and care.

    47:13-47:16

You can put those next two right back to back because you know what that is?

    47:16-47:23

That is picking my child up right after that, putting them in my arms, I give them kisses and I pray for 'em.

    47:24-47:25

I don't just spank 'em and send 'em out.

    47:26-47:29

No, I wanna make sure they understand, listen, I love them.

    47:30-47:33

And I tell 'em that over and over and over again.

    47:34-47:37

Listen, I love you so very much and I don't want you to act like this.

    47:38-47:39

I love you and I kiss them.

    47:40-47:44

You see, there is nothing about physical abuse in that at all.

    47:45-47:49

That is out of love that I care for them and I'm concerned about their life.

    47:50-48:05

And so that last point of restoration and care is so important that they know, and they do, they say they know that daddy loves them and I hold them close and then I'll pray with them, Pray God, help them.

    48:05-48:06

God, I know you love them.

    48:06-48:10

I usually say this almost every time I pray, God, I know you love them and I love them.

    48:11-48:13

And so God, help them be obedient.

    48:14-48:16

And then the last thing is repentance.

    48:16-48:18

If they hit their brother, tell him to go back and ask forgiveness.

    48:19-48:20

    So we act like this.

    48:20-48:23

So go back and seek forgiveness.

    48:25-48:27

And you say, Jeremiah, that's gonna take time.

    48:27-48:31

Yeah, it does take a little bit of time, but I'll tell you, it's so important.

    48:32-48:36

And a lot of times the reason why we don't discipline correctly is because we don't have the time.

    48:38-48:42

But it is so important that we take that time to discipline our children.

    48:43-48:44

    Now what determines the rod?

    48:45-48:47

Listen, children would do childish things.

    48:47-48:48

    What determines the rod?

    48:48-48:54

Three things I would say determines the rod is disobedience, if they disobey, that's one SWOT.

    48:54-48:59

Defiance, if they're rebellious, then that's a SWOT.

    48:59-49:00

    And then also disrespect.

    49:02-49:04

    So disobeying, defiance, and disrespect.

    49:04-49:08

Those are the things that to me, and disrespect would be to a parent or to another person.

    49:08-49:10

You hit your sibling, that's disrespect for that person.

    49:11-49:12

We don't hit, we don't do that.

    49:12-49:17

Now, if the child is just childish, they act like kids sometimes.

    49:17-49:23

They're wild, they're crazy, and they're not defiantly disobeying, or they're not defiantly doing this because they're rebellious.

    49:24-49:24

    They're just children.

    49:25-49:28

Well, then I make them do jumping jacks, or I make them run laps.

    49:28-49:30

I make them run laps in my house.

    49:31-49:32

They do a stair lap is what I call it.

    49:33-49:43

If my kids are just getting a little wild, they're being, you know, hadden, he's a boy, I say, "You guys, you gotta stair lap, go!" And they'll do these stair laps, and they're up and down the stair, we have three flights of stairs, so they'll run up and down.

    49:43-49:45

Even Eliana, she's four, stair lap, go!

    49:46-49:57

Okay, and so unless they're disobedient, defiant, or disrespectful, that's the only thing that's gonna cause them to come up, and I'm gonna walk through those steps with them, and I'm gonna pray with them, and I'm gonna use the rod.

    49:58-50:01

One time, and it's, it really, I don't even really hit them that hard.

    50:01-50:03

It's more my girls, I can hit them like this.

    50:03-50:06

And they're like, "Woo!" But you know what?

    50:06-50:07

    It got the point.

    50:08-50:09

    Listen, we don't do this.

    50:10-50:19

And so next time they're about to do it, they'll go, "Oh, I don't want that." I mean, Eliana, I mean, Selah, my two-year-old, you said, "When do you start?" Well, Selah understands it.

    50:19-50:19

    She understands it right.

    50:19-50:20

    She's two years old.

    50:21-50:23

And for her, I seriously just gotta go like this.

    50:23-50:28

And she just, "Bye, Selah!" And, but she's learning.

    50:28-50:36

And I can look at her and say, "Do you wanna spank it?" "Ugh, she knows, I don't want that." And I believe scripture understands that.

    50:38-50:39

    Discipline, discipling.

    50:40-50:50

Now listen, parents, Proverbs 3, 5, and 6 is, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, "lead not in your own understanding, "in all your ways acknowledge Him, "and He will direct your paths." Trust in God, He'll direct your paths.

    50:51-50:51

He will help you do it.

    50:52-50:53

He will help you do it.

    50:53-50:56

And here's the last one, we'll close, is persevere to the end.

    50:57-50:59

    Persevere to the end.

    51:00-51:01

Train up a child in the way you should go.

    51:02-51:05

I believe there is a perseverance undertone right there.

    51:06-51:08

So when he's old, it's gonna take time.

    51:08-51:12

    It's not, listen, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon.

    51:14-51:15

    Train up your child.

    51:15-51:16

Are you gonna be perfect all the time?

    51:16-51:19

No, and if you aren't, then go back and ask their forgiveness.

    51:20-51:25

Some of you might need to go back to your kids today and say, "Listen, I have not been discipling "the way I should or disciplining you the way I should." Well, seek forgiveness.

    51:26-51:29

We praise God that it doesn't have to, It's not just a one day thing.

    51:30-51:31

This is a marathon that you're in.

    51:32-51:36

With your grandkids, you say, man, I really haven't been pouring spiritually into the life of my grandkids.

    51:36-51:37

    Well, start doing it.

    51:37-51:39

You say, Jeremiah, my kids are grown.

    51:39-51:40

Well, you still should be discipling them.

    51:41-51:42

Well, say they don't really want it.

    51:43-51:46

Well, you give them what they want, what they don't, and you just pray and ask God.

    51:47-51:50

You can always be the example of Christ for them, though.

    51:51-51:55

And realize, though, it is God who changes hearts.

    51:55-51:56

    It's not you.

    51:57-51:59

So don't put it on you, it is God.

    52:00-52:03

You keep your focus on Christ.

    52:04-52:09

Listen, children are a blessing from the Lord, but they're an incredible responsibility.

    52:11-52:17

And I hope that you see today, I hope that you understand that God has called us to train up our children.

    52:19-52:19

    Is it tough? Yeah.

    52:20-52:24

And maybe some of you look back and say, man, I wish I would've heard this about 30 years ago.

    52:26-52:30

But listen, there are families right in here that you should be praying for.

    52:31-52:39

There's people in that children's ministry that maybe you can, maybe you can go in there and start to help with the children's clubs and you can help train up children.

    52:40-52:42

Everybody in here is a teacher.

    52:44-52:46

So don't get bitter and angry 'cause of what?

    52:46-52:48

Maybe your kids aren't walking with God right now.

    52:48-52:50

Listen, I've seen God change so many hearts.

    52:52-52:54

It's in His hand, their life's in His hand.

    52:54-52:56

    So pray and ask God.

    52:57-53:00

If you who have younger kids here, listen, you have an incredible responsibility.

    53:01-53:03

You have an incredible opportunity because your kids are young.

    53:03-53:04

How are you going to train them?

    53:05-53:08

You say, "My kids are already teenagers." Well, don't just throw in the towel.

    53:08-53:10

    Jump back into the game.

    53:10-53:12

You still got them for a couple more years.

    53:12-53:13

    Jump back into the game.

    53:14-53:16

You have grandkids coming along the way.

    53:16-53:16

    Jump in.

    53:18-53:24

You say, "God, I want to." Now listen, every person here is going to parent a little bit different, and that's fine.

    53:25-53:26

They're the truths of God's Word.

    53:27-53:31

You don't have to go through those steps on discipline like my dad did and how I do.

    53:31-53:34

That's not right there in the scriptures. I think there's truths up there.

    53:35-53:39

But Pastor Jeff, he's going to do his kids different than I'm going to do my kids.

    53:40-53:41

    And that's fine.

    53:42-53:47

And he has the freedom to do how he's going to train his kids, but he's still going to train his kids.

    53:48-53:51

He's still going to discipline and disciple his kids differently.

    53:51-53:52

    Disciple and discipline his kids.

    53:52-53:54

He has to do that and I have to do mine.

    53:55-53:56

And you have to do yours.

    53:58-54:03

And so I pray that today that you will say, God, no matter where I'm at, God help me.

    54:04-54:07

Don't walk away saying, oh man, I'm such a loser as a parent.

    54:07-54:07

    No.

    54:09-54:12

Walk away saying, God, okay, what stage am I at right now?

    54:13-54:22

Let me apply some of these truths to wherever I'm at, whoever it may be, and watch the joy flow through your life.

    54:24-54:25

Why don't you bow your head and close your eyes with me?
