    01:26-01:36

Amen So, there's one day early on in my career that it was winter time and my dad told my brother Kent and I that we were going out to this one job.

    01:37-01:44

We had to get up on a roof which was covered in snow and we had to reach up to a higher wall to do a little bit of work.

    01:45-01:49

When I left the shop in the morning, my dad told me, "Ryan, you have one job to do.

    01:49-01:53

All you're going to do is hold Kent's ladder." I said, "Okay, that's easy.

    01:54-01:55

I can do that, I think.

    01:56-01:59

So we get out to the job and things are going along pretty well.

    02:00-02:04

Kent would go up the ladder, I'd hold the ladder for him. As he'd come down, I'd move out of the way.

    02:05-02:06

Things were going along just smoothly.

    02:07-02:14

Well, like I said, it was wintertime and that roof was covered in snow, so it was an extremely slick surface. So it was vitally important that I hold this ladder.

    02:17-02:25

But also, whenever it's cold out, we carry heating chests to keep our material warm, and it's just an easier process for us if materials warm to work with.

    02:26-02:29

And I noticed that that heating element had gone out.

    02:29-02:32

So I was kind of messing with it, trying to figure out why it wasn't working.

    02:32-02:45

And as Kent was getting more material, he said, "Hey, get over here, I'm going up this ladder." And I told him, "Just hold on a second, "let me see if I can, "let me figure out what's going on with this." I mean, I had no idea why it wasn't working, but I wanted to act like I knew.

    02:48-02:52

So Kent, in typical older brother fashion, ignored me and went up the ladder.

    02:53-02:56

And in typical younger brother fashion, I ignored him.

    02:57-02:59

    Two people ignoring each other.

    03:01-03:08

Not ten seconds later, Kent gets to the top of that ladder, reached up as high as he could, and wham! That ladder kicked out.

    03:09-03:11

Kent probably fell 20, 25 feet.

    03:12-03:20

And I watched him fall from the top and just smack the ground, and just crumpled into this heap of human.

    03:22-03:26

And my initial thought, honestly, my initial thought, I thought he was dead.

    03:27-03:29

    But he obviously wasn't.

    03:29-03:30

    He's still here today.

    03:32-03:35

But I remember having to call my dad and be like, "Hey, Dad.

    03:37-03:39

Remember that one thing you told me to do?

    03:40-03:41

    Yeah, I didn't do that.

    03:42-03:48

And exactly what you thought was going to happen, happened." And I remember, and my dad's sitting over here laughing.

    03:49-03:52

And I remember how mad he was at us.

    03:53-03:55

Because he's like, "Ryan, I told you to do one thing.

    03:56-03:56

    One thing.

    03:57-04:07

And you didn't do it." And for years, my brother, it's kind of become a standing joke that I blame Kent that he fell because he didn't listen to me, and he blames me because I didn't listen to him.

    04:08-04:10

And all in all, the truth is I didn't do my job.

    04:11-04:16

As much as I want to blame Kent, I didn't do my job.

    04:16-04:19

I was told by my dad to do one job.

    04:20-04:24

And whether I wanted to do it or not, I was to do that job.

    04:27-04:30

And see, our heavenly father also tells us to do one job.

    04:31-04:35

And whether we wanna do that or not, we have a duty to that job.

    04:37-04:45

And that job is to preach the word, preach the gospel, not just with our words, but with our actions, with our lives.

    04:46-04:50

We have to live out the gospel and tell every single person about the gospel.

    04:51-04:52

    That is our job.

    04:54-05:02

And please don't think that this is just another how to witness better sermon, because telling people about the gospel goes far beyond just witnessing to them.

    05:02-05:04

Like I said, it's a call to action.

    05:05-05:08

Your life has to match the words coming out of your mouth and vice versa.

    05:11-05:16

And when we look at this passage, like Jeff said on the video, we're going in in 2 Timothy 4.

    05:17-05:21

Paul is talking to Timothy, and so it's two pastors talking to each other.

    05:21-05:25

And I don't want anybody to zone out and go, "Ok, this is just for pastors." No, no, no.

    05:25-05:32

This is so applicable for us here today in our current America, in our current country that we live in.

    05:32-05:34

Now more than ever, people need the Gospel.

    05:34-05:36

And it is our job to get that to them.

    05:39-05:44

So let's look at what Paul told Timothy and find the application in these words.

    05:46-06:01

So, verse number 1, 2 Timothy 4, "I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom, preach the Word.

    06:02-06:05

Be ready in season and out of season.

    06:05-06:09

Reprove, rebuke, exhort with complete patience and teaching.

    06:09-06:24

"For the time is coming when people will not endorse sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." Let's stop right there for a second.

    06:26-06:27

Did you hear what he said there?

    06:27-06:29

He said the time is coming when people aren't going to listen.

    06:30-06:32

It sounds really familiar right now.

    06:33-06:37

Shout out, what's the hot button topics that people are talking about?

    06:37-06:43

Not, don't tell me about political things, whether it be immigration or tax laws, anything.

    06:43-06:47

What's the moral hot button topic that people are talking about?

    06:47-06:47

    Shout 'em out.

    06:49-06:50

    Abortion.

    06:51-06:51

    What else?

    06:51-06:52

    What's that?

    06:53-06:54

    Homosexuality.

    06:55-06:55

    Transgender.

    06:58-07:00

Those are the things that we're arguing about in today's America.

    07:02-07:03

    And what's happening?

    07:03-07:08

The people on either side of the coin are finding somebody that says, no, you're right.

    07:09-07:10

And on the other side, they're going, no, you're right.

    07:11-07:13

    And everybody's just choosing sides.

    07:15-07:18

They're doing exactly what Paul said they were gonna do.

    07:19-07:20

    They're gonna turn away.

    07:21-07:23

They're gonna find teachers that suit their own passions.

    07:23-07:25

That's exactly what people are doing today.

    07:27-07:36

And now, more than ever, we as Christians, as followers of Christ have to stand up and be bold.

    07:37-07:43

We can't be these, I stole this off Caleb, we can't be secret agent Christians anymore.

    07:43-07:46

We have to get out of the shadows, stop lurking around behind everything.

    07:47-07:49

Be bold, be proud of who we are.

    07:49-07:53

Because everybody needs to hear that, especially here.

    07:53-07:55

Out our back door, people need to hear this.

    07:58-08:00

This is the time where it's so powerful.

    08:00-08:02

    God's word is so powerful.

    08:03-08:06

We have to be bold today, starting today.

    08:10-08:13

And you might be sitting here going, I hear you, but I don't know how to do that.

    08:15-08:17

But the good thing is, Paul didn't stop talking to Timothy.

    08:19-08:29

He laid out exactly how to do that, and he told Timothy that, and we too can lean from that and use those same principles today.

    08:30-08:32

So let's look at how we preach the gospel.

    08:34-08:44

Verse five, as for you, Christians, as for you, each and every person here, as for you, always be sober-minded.

    08:45-08:46

    This is my first point.

    08:47-08:48

    Stay focused.

    08:51-08:52

    Stay focused.

    08:54-08:57

We know what being sober means, okay?

    08:57-08:59

    It means don't be drunk.

    09:00-09:03

But it also means don't have distractions in your life.

    09:04-09:06

Allow your mind to be free.

    09:06-09:11

Allow your mind to be clear so that you can focus, so you can stay focused.

    09:14-09:18

Every year, a neighbor of mine and myself, we go hunting.

    09:19-09:21

We go up to Mahaffey, PA.

    09:21-09:22

He has a camp up there.

    09:23-09:28

And it's usually around the same time every year, first or second weekend in November.

    09:28-09:29

And it's a lot of fun.

    09:29-09:32

we spent about three days up there and we just hunt the whole time.

    09:33-09:37

Typical, you know, macho man weekend, okay?

    09:39-09:46

But I tell you what, that week leading up to that Thursday night when I pull out of my house, man, I'm the world's best husband.

    09:47-09:49

Why? Because I don't want to get grounded, okay?

    09:51-09:53

Because I so bad want to go on that trip.

    09:53-09:55

I so bad want to go guilt-free.

    09:56-10:03

that I don't want my wife to be upset with me, that I didn't get anything done, that I picked a fight with her that's still going on?

    10:04-10:10

Because who wants to go on a fun weekend, whatever it may be, whether it's hunting, fishing, golfing, whatever it may be?

    10:10-10:14

Who wants to go knowing that the second I get home, things aren't going to be good?

    10:15-10:21

No, you want to go and you want to have so much fun and you don't honestly want to think about what's going on at home.

    10:22-10:34

So your focus that week leading up to - asked me to re-shingle the roof, and I will go to Home Depot at 3 a.m. in the morning, get all the material, come home and start working and not stop until that roof's done.

    10:36-10:43

So that when I pull out on Thursday, I'm done. And that's the same focus we have to have.

    10:43-10:55

I'm focused on, I watch every single word that I say, I'm real careful about what I do, I have the blinders on because I don't want, like I said, I love my wife, but I don't I don't want to upset her, I want to go.

    10:57-10:59

And that's the same focus we have to have.

    11:03-11:04

You might ask me, how do I stay focused?

    11:05-11:08

Well, first of all, you have to figure out what the distractions are in your life.

    11:10-11:14

You have to figure those out, and you're the only person that knows what those distractions are.

    11:14-11:18

And you have to find them, and you have to remove them from your life.

    11:19-11:20

And maybe you can't remove them.

    11:22-11:27

But you have to find a way for those to no longer be distractions in your life.

    11:28-11:34

You have to control them so that you are staying completely focused on your one job as a Christian.

    11:37-11:40

You have to be focused in preaching the gospel.

    11:42-11:51

Back in verse 5, "As for you, always be sober-minded," we said that, stay focused, "endure suffering." That's my second point, endure suffering.

    11:54-12:05

About a year ago, actually about two years ago now, a friend of my wife's from high school was diagnosed with cancer.

    12:06-12:08

And she was 28 years old.

    12:09-12:11

    She had a three-year-old and a one-year-old.

    12:13-12:16

and a husband that they were high school sweethearts.

    12:17-12:18

    Really all American story.

    12:20-12:22

She was a beautiful young lady.

    12:22-12:24

She was a beauty pageant contestant.

    12:24-12:26

Just had such a strong testimony for Christ.

    12:28-12:35

And I remember my wife showed me on Facebook that she did this Facebook live video and just kind of announcing that she had been diagnosed with this cancer.

    12:36-12:42

And it was early on and they kind of thought, okay, we can get control of this and had a lot of high hopes.

    12:44-12:45

And she praised God at the end of it.

    12:47-12:59

She glorified God and she said, "Whatever happens, God's in control." But oftentimes that's easy when you don't really know what the end results are gonna be.

    12:59-13:01

At that time it was pretty positive.

    13:02-13:06

But as the year went on, every month or so, she would put up a medical update.

    13:07-13:10

And each time, the diagnosis would get worse and worse.

    13:12-13:15

And every time, at the end, she would praise God.

    13:18-13:31

And about a year later, I remember she put a video on and her beauty pageant sisters had done a fundraiser for her and in less than 24 hours, they raised $11,000 for her and her husband.

    13:33-13:34

And you might say, man, that's awesome.

    13:34-13:42

But all I could see was this maybe 80-pound girl that just looked like a human skeleton.

    13:44-13:46

She could hardly talk at this point.

    13:47-13:58

The cancer had spread throughout her entire body and just had turned into, I think at that point she had multiple cancers and it just destroyed her.

    14:00-14:07

And two weeks later she passed, leaving her husband, her one-year-old, and her three-year-old.

    14:09-14:16

And I remember, for me and my wife, that hit us so hard because I'm pretty much in that same boat where I have little children.

    14:16-14:21

And in my mind, I sat there and I went, "What would I do if I was the husband and my wife left me?

    14:23-14:24

"My wife takes care of everything.

    14:26-14:41

"And for her to just be gone, what do I do?" And I remember I was at the Tough Mudder one day and I got back to the truck and got cleaned up and Sarah had sent me a text and she said, you need to get on Facebook and you need to see what Caleb, her husband, posted.

    14:44-14:48

And he put a Facebook Live video on maybe hours after his wife had passed.

    14:51-15:05

And in his obvious sorrow of, he had just lost his beautiful wife, he went through all that and at the end, He lifted up his hands and he praised God for healing his wife.

    15:07-15:10

And he praised God for the path that he had chosen for his wife.

    15:11-15:14

And he said, "This is not the end of my wife's testimony.

    15:15-15:33

"This is not the end of my testimony." Christians, church, a Christian suffering and praising God is single-handedly the most powerful thing we can do to further the kingdom of Christ.

    15:34-15:34

    Why?

    15:35-15:37

Because it doesn't make sense to an unsaved person.

    15:37-15:45

If you are suffering, and maybe you haven't suffered in that way, but I guarantee you, you've suffered in some ways.

    15:47-15:52

But I promise you, every time you suffer, God gives you a pulpit to preach from.

    15:52-15:59

And if you can do that, And you can find that pulpit wherever God has it, man, you can move mountains.

    16:01-16:06

When you suffer for Christ, that is the most powerful thing we can do.

    16:06-16:11

James chapter one tells us that, "Count it all joy when you go through diverse temptations." Why?

    16:12-16:16

Because God's not only strengthening you, but he's also bringing his glory out through your suffering.

    16:17-16:24

If you can praise God while you are going through hell on earth, God's glory is gonna come out.

    16:24-16:30

So you have to endure suffering and you have to praise God when you are going through that.

    16:31-16:33

That's how you preach the gospel when you're suffering.

    16:34-16:34

    Praise God through it.

    16:35-16:37

Preach the gospel even though God's putting you through a test.

    16:40-16:41

    Go back to verse 5.

    16:44-16:49

Always be sober minded, endure suffering, and do the work of an evangelist.

    16:52-16:52

    Evangelize.

    16:52-16:53

    That's my third point.

    16:56-16:56

    Evangelize.

    16:56-16:57

We all know what it means.

    16:57-16:58

    It means tell everybody.

    16:59-17:00

    Tell everybody about Christ.

    17:01-17:06

And if I can be completely transparent with you right now, this is the hardest thing for me to do.

    17:07-17:11

And I am probably the worst person in here at doing that.

    17:11-17:13

I am not good at evangelizing.

    17:14-17:15

    I'm not good.

    17:15-17:17

I often times shirk at the opportunity.

    17:18-17:19

    Just being honest.

    17:20-17:21

I'm not always great at this.

    17:22-17:24

And I gotta be better at it.

    17:24-17:25

We all have to be better at it.

    17:27-17:30

Because here's the thing, and this is kind of a two-part thing.

    17:31-17:38

When it comes to evangelizing, when you accepted Christ's free gift, Jesus died on the cross for us, was buried, and rose again.

    17:38-17:39

    That's the gospel story.

    17:41-17:48

When he did that and you accepted that free gift, you went, "God, okay, I wanna be in your family.

    17:48-17:55

"I wanna be a child for you." He says, "Great, you don't have to do anything for that, "to accept that, but now that you're mine, "here's what I need you to do.

    17:56-17:58

"You've gotta tell everybody about me.

    17:59-18:00

"You have to tell everybody your story.

    18:03-18:07

"You have to tell everybody." That is your duty as a Christian, is to tell everybody.

    18:09-18:14

And even though that's our duty, which it is, God commands us to do it, He did it in the Great Commission.

    18:15-18:17

Go out and tell everybody about me.

    18:19-18:26

And even though that's our duty, what oftentimes what we're bad at is making that our desire, making that our passion.

    18:29-18:31

It's just like, use my wife for example again.

    18:32-18:36

My wife is a big Eagles, Philadelphia Eagles fan.

    18:37-18:43

And that is very big point of, very big point of contention in our family.

    18:45-18:46

    But you know what?

    18:46-19:15

care. I mean she's fly, eagles fly every day. She loves the eagles and you know what she doesn't care if anybody else likes the Eagles. That's her team. That's her passion. When she talks about the Eagles she's passionate about it. She's not embarrassed about it. She doesn't care what you think about her. And she'll walk away going, "So? Nick Foles won the MVP a couple years ago. Carson Wentz is going to be hurt halfway through the season, but whatever.

    19:17-19:17

    She doesn't care.

    19:17-19:18

    She's passionate about it.

    19:21-19:23

And that's the same thing we have to have.

    19:24-19:28

Jesus Christ has to be so important to us that it just oozes out of us.

    19:29-19:32

And oftentimes, we're afraid because we're afraid of what people are going to think.

    19:34-19:34

    But why?

    19:36-19:42

This is single-handedly the most important thing that will happen to any human being is accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.

    19:45-19:48

And sometimes we're afraid to talk about it, because we're afraid of what people are gonna think about it.

    19:49-19:50

    I do the same thing.

    19:52-19:52

    I do.

    19:55-19:56

That's kind of an awkward conversation.

    19:57-19:58

    So what?

    19:59-20:01

They might think of me as a Jesus freak.

    20:01-20:01

    Great.

    20:04-20:04

    Great.

    20:07-20:18

And this goes back even to what I preached about last year, that if it's not necessarily a passion, and I'm preaching to myself on this, if it's not a passion for you, man, that's a problem with sanctification.

    20:19-20:28

So you should be so sanctified in your progress, in your sanctification, needs to be so advanced that you can't help it.

    20:28-20:35

You just, you try to talk about other things, but your passion is so much about Christ that you can't stop talking about it.

    20:35-20:36

It just continues to come out.

    20:39-20:45

And the best part about this is you don't have to dress up the gospel.

    20:46-20:56

I mean, if you think about it, if the gospel story happened in today's world, if there was a dad that gave up his life for his son to live, man, that would be a viral video on Facebook.

    20:56-20:57

That would be a viral video on everything.

    21:00-21:03

Because the story in itself is so powerful.

    21:03-21:06

The death, the burial, the resurrection of Christ.

    21:07-21:12

And Paul himself was encouraged that he himself didn't have to dress up the Gospel.

    21:12-21:18

Arguably one of the greatest preachers to ever walk the face of the planet was excited that he didn't have to dress this up.

    21:18-21:24

If we look at 1 Corinthians 1.17, it will be up on the screen for you.

    21:24-21:35

"For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the Gospel, and not with words of eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power." In other words, don't dress it up.

    21:35-21:38

You don't have to have this great speech about it.

    21:38-21:41

You just have to tell it, because here's the thing.

    21:41-21:44

And here's a little cliche for you.

    21:45-21:47

If you try to dress it up, you're going to mess it up.

    21:49-21:55

But truthfully, get out of the way, just tell what the gospel did for you, just tell the gospel for what it is.

    21:55-21:56

    Don't sugarcoat it.

    21:57-21:58

    Don't apologize for it.

    21:58-21:59

    Just tell it.

    22:00-22:04

Get out of the way and speak the words that God put in the Bible.

    22:06-22:09

Preach the gospel and allow the gospel to work.

    22:11-22:21

My last point, going back to verse 5, always be sober minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, and lastly, fulfill your ministry.

    22:21-22:24

    Finish strong. Finish strong.

    22:27-22:29

And this is so important, church.

    22:31-22:48

Because if I said earlier, where I said, enduring suffering and suffering for Christ and being bold through your suffering is the most important or is the most powerful thing we can do to spread the gospel. Not finishing strong is the most detrimental thing we can do.

    22:50-23:12

Because why? Because we're showing to the outside world that this Christian walk, this Christian life that we live on is long. It's a marathon. Paul talks about it later on in the passage when he says, "I have fought the fight, I've finished the race. It wasn't a slow race, it was a long marathon. And at times it's grueling, and at times it's difficult. But we do it because we know the rewards that are going to come.

    23:14-23:59

Well the outside world isn't necessarily seeing those rewards. All they're seeing is the suffering and the agony. Well if we don't finish strong and we fall off, the unsaved world is going to sit there and go, "Why am I even going to start? You suffered for all this time and you went through all this defeat and this agony and you didn't even complete it. Why am I even going to step one foot on that track? Why do I want that in my life?" Finishing strong is so important and we see this time and time again of pastors, evangelists, people great Christian people and they fall.

    23:59-24:07

And here's the thing, anything and everything, those men or those women, whoever they are, everything they said could have been 100% accurate.

    24:08-24:12

But when they don't finish strong, everything they said is now void.

    24:14-24:20

Because what all the unsaved world is seeing is that they went, see, I told you it wouldn't work.

    24:21-24:22

I told you it wasn't gonna happen.

    24:23-24:24

    It's not worth it.

    24:25-24:26

    And we know it is.

    24:28-24:29

    We have to finish strong.

    24:29-24:36

You should be praying for the people that, on their human side, may be looking close to the end of their life.

    24:36-24:37

Pray for them to finish strong.

    24:38-24:43

Pray for the younger people that, again, humanistically, seem to have a long life ahead of them.

    24:44-24:48

Pray for them to continue to be strong through their Christian life.

    24:49-24:50

    And finish strong.

    24:51-24:53

Because if we don't, it's so detrimental.

    24:54-24:55

    It is so detrimental.

    24:58-25:01

We have to finish strong in preaching the gospel.

    25:03-25:07

I wanna leave you with a few practical tips before I end this sermon.

    25:10-25:11

Tips on how to preach the gospel.

    25:13-25:14

    Number one, get prepared.

    25:16-25:16

    Get prepared.

    25:17-25:21

Practice, practice what you're gonna say to somebody whenever the opportunity comes to preach the gospel.

    25:22-25:25

Practice it, just like Justin, Rich, Mike, and myself.

    25:25-25:28

I've rehearsed this thing a hundred times at this point.

    25:29-25:31

You might say it doesn't show, but.

    25:31-25:32

    (audience laughing)

    25:34-25:36

    No, rehearse it, practice it.

    25:36-25:37

Get in your mind what you're gonna talk about.

    25:38-25:39

Figure out the passages that you're gonna use.

    25:40-25:40

    Memorize.

    25:41-25:43

Kind of have a game plan put together.

    25:43-25:53

And don't, no matter what, don't ever, ever, ever be afraid if somebody asks you a question that you don't know, don't be afraid to say, "I don't know, let me get back to you." Don't try to just wing it.

    25:54-25:55

That's just going to get worse.

    25:56-25:58

I was told that when I was preaching one time.

    26:02-26:04

    Number two, ask other Christians.

    26:04-26:15

Reach out to mature Christians, whether it be the elders of this church, or Jeff, or other pastors that you may know, or people that you hold at a high value in your life.

    26:15-26:16

Ask them what their method is.

    26:17-26:18

    Lean on them.

    26:18-26:19

    Learn from them.

    26:21-26:27

Take those practical tips that they can give you and make that a part of your witnessing program.

    26:28-26:34

And lastly, pray for God's peace, because ultimately we're afraid.

    26:35-26:37

We're afraid of what people might think.

    26:39-26:41

We're nervous about what people might say about us.

    26:44-26:47

Pray for God's peace. Pray for God to open the door for you to walk through.

    26:49-26:51

And pray for God to force you through that door.

    26:53-26:56

When God opens the door for you to share the gospel, step through it.

    26:57-26:59

And God will give you the words to say, and God will give you the peace for it.

    27:02-27:03

    So pray for God's peace.

    27:05-27:08

And as I close, I want every single person to think about this.

    27:08-27:12

I want you to think back to when you were saved.

    27:13-27:25

Whether that was a long process or a short process, I want you to think back to that point when you said to God, "I accept your free gift and I want to start following you." However that is, I want you to think back to that.

    27:27-27:30

Now I want you to think of the person that helped get you there.

    27:31-27:40

Whoever that may be. Maybe it was a multitude of people. Maybe it was one singular person. Whoever got you to, helped you see the light. I want you to think about that person.

    27:42-27:49

Now I want you to think about if that person up and didn't tell you about the gospel.

    27:51-27:54

Think about if that person didn't step through the door that God opened up for you.

    27:56-27:58

That should shake you in your boots.

    27:59-28:11

Where would you be if that person hadn't shared the gospel to you, if that person hadn't stepped through the door and did exactly what God was asking them to do?

    28:12-28:12

    Where would you be?

    28:15-28:19

And every time we don't walk through the door, it's exactly what we're doing.

    28:22-28:25

Is that person ultimately responsible for their own salvation?

    28:26-28:26

    Yeah.

    28:27-28:28

But you know what, you might have a hand in it.

    28:31-28:34

And when God opens that opportunity, He's commanding you, talk to this person.

    28:35-28:40

And when you say no to God, man, that's a bad thing.

    28:42-28:50

So I challenge you, leave here today, start preaching the gospel, not just with your words, but with your actions.

    28:50-28:52

Allow those two to line up.

    28:52-28:55

They must line up if we wanna be effective preachers of the gospel.

    28:57-29:00

Live it out every day, unafraid.

    29:01-29:02

    Let's pray.

    29:04-29:06

Heavenly Father, we just thank you for this day.

    29:08-29:12

God, I ask you that if there's a person in here today that doesn't know the Gospel story.

    29:14-29:18

Let us practice what I just shared today.

    29:18-29:19

    Let's preach to that person.

    29:19-29:21

Let's tell them the Gospel story.

    29:22-29:25

Don't let them leave here today without knowing you, God.

    29:26-29:32

God, I ask you to please allow this church to be bold in our community, in Wexford.

    29:34-29:35

    Allow us to be bold.

    29:35-29:38

Let everybody know what our church is all about.

    29:39-29:40

    Preach the gospel, God.

    29:42-29:47

And allow each and every person to leave here today and take this to their environment that they live in on a regular basis.

    29:49-29:50

And be bold in that environment.

    29:52-29:59

God, because we are nobodies, that you chose to be a part of you.

    30:01-30:03

And you chose to use us to further your kingdom.

    30:05-30:06

Father, let that be our motivation.

    30:07-30:09

Please bless this day and bless this church.

    30:10-30:10

    Amen.

Small Group Discussion

Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5

GROUP

  1. We as Christian have been given one job to fulfill… Preach the Gospel... God chose “nobody’s” to complete this job. How does God prefer to use regular people?

  2. Why is Enduring Suffering such a powerful testimony for God?

  3. Why is Finishing Strong so important? Give a specific example of someone is your life that finished strong and an example of someone that didn’t finish strong.

BREAKOUT

Have you ever failed to walk through a door to God has opened for you to preach the Gospel? Pray for that person that was missed that day to come to Christ either through you or another Christian.

Watch Your Mouth

Introduction:

Our Tongues (James 3:1-12):

  1. Are the most Dominant part of our bodies. (Jas 3:1-5a)

Acts 20:28 - "Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood."

  2. Are able to Wreak Havoc. (Jas 3:5b-6)
  3. Are Untamable. (Jas 3:7-10a)
  1. Are *Untamable...without the Holy Spirit. (Jas 3:10b-12)

Luke 6:43-45 - For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Practical Ways to Watch Your Mouth:

  1. Watch Your Media.

Proverbs 4:25 - "Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you."

  2. Watch Your Company.

Proverbs 24:1-2 - "Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them, for their hearts devise violence, and their lips talk of trouble."

  3. Watch Your Walk.

Proverbs 8:20-21 - "I walk in the way of righteousness, in the paths of justice, granting an inheritance to those who love me, and filling their treasuries."

  • 00:31-00:33

Okay, there's a few amount of you.

    00:34-00:39

I'm in this category and it's not just because I have a summer birthday, but that is nice.

    00:40-00:41

For me it's everything that comes with the summertime.

    00:42-00:47

We have mostly nice weather, vacations, and an occasional holiday.

    00:48-00:53

You know, we just celebrated the 4th of July, but did you know that there's another holiday coming up?

    00:54-00:55

Yeah, I'll give you a hint.

    00:55-00:57

    It's on July 12th.

    00:58-00:58

    Anybody?

    01:00-01:00

    Okay?

    01:01-01:02

    I'll give another hint.

    01:02-01:06

It's a made-up one based on the greatest holiday we have, bar none.

    01:08-01:08

    Nobody?

    01:10-01:12

    Yes, Christmas in July.

    01:13-01:15

Okay, some of you know what I'm talking about.

    01:16-01:18

Some of you probably celebrate it too.

    01:18-01:24

So instead of heading to the beach and hanging ten, you're heading to a tree nursery and hanging up stockings.

    01:26-01:29

Now I thought a fair bit as to why people would want to do this.

    01:30-01:31

you would want to celebrate Christmas in July.

    01:32-01:44

See it originated in the southern hemisphere and it makes sense because July is winter time there so in order for them to have like a more traditional Christmas they'll celebrate it in July.

    01:45-01:45

    But up here?

    01:47-01:52

I mean the only logical conclusion I could find is just another excuse to watch Christmas movies.

    01:54-01:56

I mean when else is watching them acceptable?

    01:58-02:02

To me, I mean it does make sense because there's plenty of classics that I enjoy watching.

    02:02-02:05

You have How the Grinch Stole Christmas, an elf.

    02:06-02:09

But my all-time favorite, A Christmas Story.

    02:10-02:12

For me, there's lots of memorable scenes there.

    02:13-02:20

You have the Triple Dog Dare where Schwartz gets flicked to stick his tongue on a cold pole cementing it.

    02:21-02:27

Or when the main character, Ralphie, goes to the mall Santa and he tells him what he he wants for Christmas, a Red Ryder BB gun.

    02:27-02:32

And he gets his hopes crushed when the Santa says, you'll shoot your eye out, kid.

    02:34-02:40

But I think there's one scene many of us can relate to personally, when Ralphie goes to help his dad change a flat tire.

    02:42-02:44

Ralphie's standing there, and he's holding the pan of lug nuts.

    02:44-02:50

And his dad, in a hurry, goes, whips his hands, hits the pan, and the lug nuts scatter into oblivion.

    02:52-03:06

The camera pans to Ralphie's face, and purposefully and tactfully censored for the movie, Ralphie exclaims, "Oh, fudge." And his dad flabbergasted, double checks to make sure he's heard exactly what he's heard.

    03:07-03:14

Back in the car, father tells mother, and in the next scene, back at their home, we see Ralphie in the bathroom with a bright red bar of soap in his mouth.

    03:17-03:22

Now for a time of honesty congregation, how many of you have ever been in Ralphie's position?

    03:23-03:24

    Okay, yeah.

    03:26-03:33

You know, it's not the tire changing thing, but the "he's suffering a soapy Irish Spring" consequence of saying something you shouldn't have in front of your parents.

    03:34-03:36

You know, I have. Three times.

    03:38-03:42

I guess it's fitting that soap is a bitter flavor and that's usually how we describe the taste of defeat.

    03:43-03:50

Well today we're going to be in the book of James chapter 3 verses 1 through 12 talking about the very thing that Ralphie couldn't hold, our tongues.

    03:51-03:58

In this section James provides a short but convicting lesson about the tongue, how it dominates us, wreaks havoc, and is untamable.

    03:59-04:08

Just to give a background on the book of James as a whole, James who is the half-brother of Jesus, wrote this book as a summary of his wisdom to the early church.

    04:09-04:16

It doesn't necessarily teach us new things, but it constructs 12 lessons, mainly from Proverbs and from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount.

    04:17-04:20

And each one is designed to get into our business and challenge how we live.

    04:22-04:27

This is one of those books that can be uncomfortable to read, depending on which of these lessons that you struggle the most with.

    04:28-04:30

And for me, this is mine.

    04:31-04:33

It's why I wanted to preach on it.

    04:34-04:39

Because we as Christians need constant reminders and course corrections to keep pressing onwards with sanctification.

    04:41-04:43

Before we dive into the Word, let's open up in some prayer.

    04:45-04:48

Heavenly Father, I thank you for giving me this opportunity.

    04:49-04:51

And I pray that you grant me clarity.

    04:52-04:55

Use me as your vessel to convey your Word.

    04:57-05:03

Just pray that you open our ears and hearts to your Word, and that you fill us this day.

    05:04-05:05

Pray this in your Son, Jesus' name.

    05:06-05:06

    Amen.

    05:08-05:10

So we're in James 3, starting in verse 1.

    05:11-05:18

And the first part of our passage talks about how we need to watch our mouths, because our tongues are the most dominant parts of our bodies.

    05:21-05:31

So in verse 1, "Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness, for we all stumble in many ways.

    05:32-05:37

And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.

    05:38-05:43

If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well.

    05:44-05:51

Look at the ships also, though they are so large and driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.

    05:51-05:58

So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things." Now there's a lot to digest here.

    05:58-06:04

James first opens up with a word of warning to the brothers saying that not many of them should become teachers.

    06:04-06:14

And then he shifts his focus to a broader illustration that talks about how the tongue is a proportionally small part of our bodies, but can control the entire thing.

    06:15-06:16

So why start with a warning?

    06:18-06:23

Organizationally, this just seems like a good way for James to launch into talking about the tongue as a whole.

    06:24-06:31

But it is a good upfront realization that not everyone is cut out to be a leader or a teacher because of their tongues.

    06:32-06:37

In Jewish culture, teaching was very highly respected and a valued profession.

    06:37-06:43

And those that were new Christians, it was only natural that they wanted to teach to bring the good news to others.

    06:44-06:47

And it is a good aspiration to want to teach.

    06:47-06:50

Even today in our culture, teachers are highly respected.

    06:52-06:58

But as a teacher of God's Word, your words and the correctness of them have eternal consequences.

    06:59-07:00

You're not teaching math or shop class.

    07:01-07:02

    You're feeding a soul.

    07:03-07:06

God takes his word seriously, more than we can fathom.

    07:08-07:17

And I was looking at verses to exemplify the seriousness of teachers and to shed a little more light on why James would give this warning.

    07:17-07:20

And I came across a verse that legitimately gave me chills.

    07:21-07:23

    It's Acts 20, verse 28.

    07:25-07:48

"Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock "in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers for the church of God which he obtained with his own blood." That last bit, "which he obtained with his own blood." It's the ultimate buyback. Christ dying a horrible death on the cross, shedding his blood so that he could purchase our salvation.

    07:49-08:36

What a sobering reminder for us to understand why we can call ourselves Christians and are able to be taught salvation in Christ. So as a teacher you're being held accountable for your words, more so than the average Joe. If you're not up to the task, heed James's warning. Let's come back to the average Joe and to his or her tongue. Verses 2 through 5. See, James knows, like I'm sure we all do, that stumbling or sinning is a part of being human. Many sins involve saying dumb or wrong things, gossip, slander, cursing, bragging, manipulating. And he goes as far as to say that if we can control our tongues, then we are perfect people and we're able to bridle or control our whole body.

    08:38-09:00

Now to me that's an interesting point because you would think it would be the opposite way, right? Like if we can control our bodies, then we can bridle our tongue. But that's not what James is saying here. He's saying that if we can just control our mouths, then we're good to go. To me it seems like that lowers the bar for success. But just like any perceptively easy task, it's not going to happen.

    09:02-09:21

This whole passage reminds me of the time that Jeff came up here and went through the Ten Commandments with the congregation and we kept score of the ones that we thought we kept throughout our lives. And it would almost be like God saying, "If you can keep just one commandment, then you're fine. I'll forgive you for the rest. But when you know What?

    09:22-09:23

    0 for 10.

    09:25-09:26

    Our tongues dominate our bodies.

    09:27-09:29

If you don't believe me, then let me ask you this.

    09:30-09:31

How often have your legs gotten you in trouble?

    09:32-09:33

    What about your arms?

    09:34-09:35

What about your ears or hands?

    09:36-09:39

I'd say never to rarely, if you can say that.

    09:40-09:41

    What about your tongue?

    09:42-09:43

    All the time.

    09:44-09:50

Like James mentioned in his illustrations, the tongue is a proportionally small part of us, but literally speaks for the body.

    09:53-09:59

Now James talks about the troubles our tongues can cause in the next verses, which is our next point.

    09:59-10:01

Our tongues are able to wreak havoc.

    10:02-10:05

Let's pick back up in the second part of verse 5.

    10:07-10:09

How great a force to set ablaze by such a small fire!

    10:10-10:13

And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness.

    10:13-10:24

The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire of life and set on fire by hell." That's pretty in your face from James.

    10:25-10:26

I'm certainly not mincing his words here.

    10:29-10:31

I'm sure many of us can relate to his first statement.

    10:32-10:36

We make one snide or rude comment and it snowballs into catastrophe.

    10:37-10:42

It doesn't take much when the hateful things we say can cut deep through established relationships and friendships.

    10:44-10:46

    I've been guilty of this.

    10:47-10:52

I remember during college I was visiting friends back home, and I had some juicy gossip about one of my friends.

    10:53-10:54

They confided with me in secret.

    10:56-11:03

And even though I wasn't a Christian at the time, you know, I knew gossiping and breaking your promises wasn't a great way to keep your friendships.

    11:05-11:06

But I felt like I had leverage and power.

    11:07-11:10

And with this knowledge, I could cause some drama whenever I wanted to.

    11:11-11:14

I could dictate what others knew or felt about them.

    11:14-11:20

So I pulled that pin, lobbed the grenade, stood back and watched the damage.

    11:22-11:27

We had been friends for three or so years at this time, but everything fell apart when I was confronted.

    11:28-11:31

I made excuses and acted like it was no big deal, right?

    11:32-11:37

But that just further spat fire and kindled this mess into a giant blaze.

    11:38-11:42

We stopped talking, and any time I hung out with our common group of friends, it was just really awkward.

    11:43-11:45

I stopped hanging out with that entire group of friends.

    11:46-11:51

Simple misuse of my tongue just snowballed into total destruction.

    11:52-11:57

And I apologize, but still, things were never the same, and I'm going to have to live with that regret.

    11:59-12:02

But maybe you've never destroyed a friendship like that.

    12:03-12:08

What about any lasting negative influence your tongue might have on young minds?

    12:08-12:14

Parents with your kids, uncles and aunts with nieces and nephews, or just any young, malleable mind.

    12:15-12:22

Now, I'm one of those guys that never knew he wanted to have kids, but now that I have them, they're the best.

    12:23-12:24

    But that's because they're mine.

    12:25-12:26

    (Laughter)

    12:26-12:38

Now, I won't go out with intentions to corrupt other people's children, but the guard I put on my actions and mouth in public is not as stringent as when I'm around my own children.

    12:40-12:41

But it doesn't work that way.

    12:42-12:46

How many of you have ever been in a store when someone is going off and there are young children around?

    12:47-12:48

Maybe it's that own person's children.

    12:49-12:52

And it's just a mess, nothing but havoc.

    12:53-12:55

Nothing good is coming out of that.

    12:57-13:01

And it's not just our direct remarks either that can cause destruction.

    13:02-13:09

How many of you have ever been on the end of a rude comment that was suffixed with "Just kidding!" Like, apparently that negates it?

    13:10-13:11

    I'm sure all of us.

    13:12-13:15

I'm sure all of us have delivered one of those comments as well.

    13:16-13:19

See, this is the world of unrighteousness delivered by the tongue.

    13:19-13:23

We say those things to get a rise out of someone or to get a chuckle from another person in the room.

    13:25-13:29

But more often than that, there's truthful hatred and animosity in our words.

    13:31-13:39

So as a small member of our body, the tongue has the ability to direct our entire bodies, as we established earlier, but also our entire lives.

    13:40-13:45

We all have our bad days, whether we're dealing with a trial or maybe we're extremely hangry.

    13:45-13:49

You know, folks that haven't had breakfast and if I'm going on too long, wrap it up.

    13:51-13:52

But how are you going to respond?

    13:53-13:55

Are you going to let Satan and sin control your words?

    13:56-13:58

What about the next trial and the one after that?

    13:59-14:02

See, throughout our lives, we're going to have millions of responses to give.

    14:03-14:04

Who will you let guide yours?

    14:07-14:11

Now we understand the dominance and the havoc our tongues can wreak, but what can we do about it?

    14:12-14:13

    How can we control it?

    14:14-14:16

Well, I've got good news and bad news.

    14:17-14:20

And James first lays out the bad news for us in the next set of verses.

    14:21-14:22

    This is our third point.

    14:23-14:25

    Our tongues are untameable.

    14:27-14:28

    Verse 7.

    14:29-14:34

"For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind.

    14:35-14:36

But no human being can tame the tongue.

    14:37-14:39

It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

    14:40-14:48

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God." How much good news there, huh?

    14:49-14:55

Our tongues are unable to be tamed, and again, James is reiterating the evils of our tongues.

    14:56-14:57

    Restless, full of poison.

    14:58-15:00

We're constantly putting our foots in our mouths.

    15:01-15:06

When I think of restless, I think of insomnia or unable to be tired out.

    15:06-15:12

But the Greek word used here is akatastatos, which means unstable or anarchic.

    15:13-15:20

Anarchy is the lack of obedience to an authority, and we typically hear that when we're talking about anarchy against the government.

    15:22-15:26

But our tongues are anarchists to us, rebelling against any sort of control.

    15:28-15:39

See, we as humans have domesticated beasts of various sizes and intellect to do our bidding, but the piece of meat in our mouths that is a part of our bodies and lives with us can't be controlled.

    15:41-15:44

The last sentence in this verse really drives home the point.

    15:45-15:46

The extremes of what our tongues can do.

    15:48-15:54

Blessing the Lord our Father and then cursing those around us, sometimes in the same day, sometimes in the same minute.

    15:56-16:06

I've caught myself numerous times on the road listening to Christian music, and I'm mid-verse changing my words from singing along to praising God to cursing out my fellow motorists.

    16:08-16:11

It almost seems like it's automatic, like I have no control over it.

    16:12-16:15

And based on James' words, he's right, I don't.

    16:17-16:20

That's where we're going to take this point, and we're going to add an asterisk to it.

    16:22-16:27

See, our tongues are untamable, asterisk, without the Holy Spirit.

    16:29-16:35

See, up until now, it's been a constant beatdown and reminders of how much and how often that we fail.

    16:36-16:37

And just with our mouths alone.

    16:38-16:40

Imagine reading the other 11 lessons in the book of James.

    16:41-16:42

Punch after punch in the gut.

    16:43-16:44

    But here's the silver lining.

    16:45-16:46

We do have a way to tame the tongue.

    16:47-16:49

Let's pick back up in the second half of verse 10.

    16:51-16:53

"My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

    16:54-16:58

"Does a spring pour forth from the same opening "both fresh and salt water?

    16:59-17:02

"Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, "or a grapevine produce figs?

    17:03-17:13

"Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water." Now reading this, you might ask yourself, where'd I get the idea that the Holy Spirit is helping us control our tongues?

    17:13-17:14

    Well, let's understand this.

    17:15-17:21

James is using Jesus' own words here, albeit in a different structure and wording.

    17:22-17:25

This actually comes from Luke 6, verses 43 through 45.

    17:26-17:34

And here Jesus is preaching to the multitudes and says this, "No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.

    17:35-17:37

Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.

    17:38-17:41

People do not pick figs from thorn bushes or grapes from briars.

    17:42-18:03

A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." And up until now, I haven't mentioned the heart, but guess what? That's where our tongue is ultimately controlled from. That's the source of its evil and wickedness.

    18:04-18:18

Even if we were to cut our tongues out and become mute, we'd still be wicked, evil people and probably resort to cursing in sign language. James says the tongue controls the body and controls the tongue.

    18:19-18:21

So we ultimately struggle against is our hearts.

    18:23-18:29

And earlier I said that the tongue literally speaks for the body, but more specifically, the tongue literally speaks for our hearts.

    18:31-18:36

See, when I destroyed my friendship earlier by gossiping, I couldn't only blame my tongue, right?

    18:37-18:42

It was the stores of evil that I had in my heart that I was pulling out and was displaying through my mouth.

    18:43-18:45

Malice, trickery, and a bit of jealousy.

    18:47-18:49

And until I came to Christ, that's what was going to remain there.

    18:51-18:55

But when you come to accept Christ into your heart, you begin a lifelong transformation journey.

    18:56-18:57

This is what we call sanctification.

    18:58-19:10

You are justified immediately, yes, but sanctification is the process of turning away from the old self and conforming to the image of Christ, replacing those stores of evil with stores of good.

    19:12-19:15

And in these verses, James is asking rhetorical questions.

    19:16-19:18

Of course a spring only produces fresh water.

    19:18-19:19

A fig tree only produces figs.

    19:20-19:22

You can't have other things come from them.

    19:23-19:26

What James is trying to do here is help us see that we are one or the other.

    19:27-19:31

You can't call yourselves Christ followers while continuing to enjoy sin.

    19:32-19:35

We can't glorify God while choosing to slander and curse others.

    19:37-19:40

So why then aren't we instantly in control of our tongues?

    19:40-19:42

Why do we continue to make mistakes?

    19:44-19:47

The unfortunate answer is because we live in a fallen world covered in sin.

    19:49-19:53

So as a Christian you have a transformed heart, but it's still in a broken body and world.

    19:55-20:00

And when I say the word "tameable" understand that it doesn't mean immediately perfect and fully obedient.

    20:01-20:06

See, people tame wild animals, but Siegfried and Roy's tiger still attack them.

    20:07-20:15

But with the Holy Spirit living inside of us and at our disposal, we can overcome because we are no longer slaves to sin, but instead choose to sin.

    20:17-20:17

    And there's the challenge.

    20:18-20:26

There's the uncomfortable fact that we will continue to sin and our tongues will continue to assert its dominance, wreak havoc where possible, and try to remain untamable.

    20:28-20:33

But I don't want to leave here today with these verses without some practical tips on how we can watch our mouths.

    20:35-20:40

You might be convicted just as I was after reading this on the vileness of your own mouth.

    20:40-20:43

But what can we do practically to get our mouths in order?

    20:44-20:49

How can we sanctify our hearts so that we can bring good things out of the good stored up in our hearts?

    20:50-20:56

Well, I'm glad you all asked, because I've got three things you can do to help you watch your mouth.

    20:57-21:06

And just like James did when compiling his wisdom into his book, we're going to associate a passage of scripture from Proverbs to back up these practical applications.

    21:07-21:09

So on your outline, practical ways to watch your mouth.

    21:10-21:12

    The first, watch your media.

    21:14-21:40

Supporting verse we're gonna use is Proverbs 4, verse 25, and that is, "Let your eyes look directly forward "and your gaze be straight before you." See, this verse comes from a larger set of instructions a father is giving to his son as wisdom, and this verse specifically talks about keeping the focus and your eyes guarded, to look towards Christ and avert from gazing at seducing or sinful directions.

    21:42-21:48

But first I want to define what I mean by media, because the word can often draw folks to different ideas.

    21:49-21:52

I'm referring to media in a much broader and larger sense.

    21:53-22:02

Any radio, television, music, movie, newspaper, magazine, comic book, manga, anything that can communicate a story or an idea.

    22:03-22:07

It's pretty much anything under the sun that we ingest through our ears and eyes.

    22:09-22:15

And the next thing I'm going to say is a broad sweeping statement, but I don't think many would disagree with me.

    22:17-22:21

Media today is more toxic, foul, violent, and obscene than ever before.

    22:22-22:31

Companies seem to be in a race to produce content that's more over the top than their competitors so that they can generate buzz or be viewed as progressive.

    22:32-22:40

We glorify sins of all kinds, same-sex relationships, adultery, infidelity, revenge murder, drug use, greed, addictions.

    22:41-22:42

    It's all there.

    22:43-22:54

And as a society, as things get more and more normalized, or rather, we get more acclimated and desensitized by this, it's just gonna get worse and worse.

    22:55-22:57

Worse things are gonna be pushed on us, right?

    22:58-23:01

And as Christians, we too can desensitize ourselves when we partake.

    23:03-23:11

Just like repeating a sin over and over, we start to feel less and less convicted and rationalize or justify doing it more and more.

    23:13-23:16

Our gaze strays, and we allow seduction and sin to grab hold.

    23:19-23:20

So you ready to get uncomfortable?

    23:21-23:23

    Let's give some specific examples.

    23:25-23:39

Shows like "Game of Thrones," "Breaking Bad," "The Walking Dead." Movies like "Deadpool," "John Wick," "Superbad." Musicians like Eminem, Madonna, Kanye West.

    23:40-23:44

Comedians like Louis C.K., Jim Norton, Dave Chappelle.

    23:45-23:50

Not to mention the dozens or hundreds of popular websites out there, all of them filled with vile content.

    23:52-23:54

And I'm not trying to condemn here, I understand that.

    23:54-23:57

I've been guilty of partaking in some of the very things I just mentioned.

    23:58-24:00

But what do you think that's doing to your heart?

    24:01-24:06

You might not notice it at first, but that might be because you're already desensitized to it.

    24:08-24:09

I want to challenge you all.

    24:10-24:15

Watch the media you consume and see how it impacts your responses, your feelings and your actions.

    24:16-24:19

I can attest that media affects me greatly.

    24:20-24:23

It's a tit-for-tat or equivalent reaction that happens to me.

    24:24-24:25

    Gritty movie, gritty mood.

    24:27-24:30

There are alternatives out there in all the media that we have.

    24:30-24:31

    For instance, music.

    24:32-24:38

I know some of you might listen to contemporary Christian bands, and I guess that's more like soft rock, right?

    24:39-24:42

What about the Screamo, thrash metal, rap fans out there, huh?

    24:42-24:43

    Where's the love?

    24:44-24:45

    Well, they exist.

    24:46-24:47

    Yeah, rappers for Christ.

    24:49-24:56

I personally used to listen to a lot of Eminem because I liked his style. It was very aggressive and raw, but obviously it's super profane.

    24:57-25:20

And once I became a Christian, I thought, "Oh, great. I'm stuck with the hymns." And there's nothing wrong with hymns. Nothing wrong with hymns. But you know, I wanted that in your face and raw, just... And there are rappers out there who glorify God in their lyrics. They give him praise, and in some songs, they're spilling out their guts on their struggles and they do it in an aggressive style.

    25:21-25:32

The point being is that if I can find a super specific music style that is God glorifying to supplant something that didn't, you too can find it in the movies and the shows you watch and any other media.

    25:33-25:34

    It's out there.

    25:35-25:38

You have no excuse to continue poisoning your hearts.

    25:40-25:57

Just to close out this point, I'm not saying we need to throw away all our non-Christian media, but I am warning you that you must be careful in all media you consume, whether it's labeled Christian or not, because when it comes through your ears and eyes, down to your heart, and eventually out of your mouth.

    26:01-26:05

Now the second way that we can watch our mouths is by watching our company.

    26:06-26:10

And our supporting verse here is Proverbs 24, verses 1 through 2.

    26:11-26:26

"Be not envious of evil men, nor desire to be with them, "for their hearts devise violence, "and their lips talk of trouble." I'm using the term company here to refer to not only the situations you put yourself in, but also the people that you're around.

    26:27-26:37

See, this verse in Proverbs talks about the people, but it also includes situational words like devise, plotting, and scheming, and those eventually lead into active situations.

    26:39-26:44

Some of you are very rigid in your character, in your comfort zones, in your behavioral patterns.

    26:45-26:51

Even being around new people or new situations, you're visiting a new place, you tend to gravitate towards things that you're familiar with, right?

    26:52-26:54

The same folks or the same activities.

    26:55-26:59

And you act in the same way, and people's perception of you can be viewed as stable.

    27:01-27:02

And there's nothing wrong with that.

    27:02-27:03

And honestly, I wish I was that way.

    27:04-27:07

Because I see myself on the opposite side.

    27:07-27:10

I do what I call chameleon behavior.

    27:11-27:15

I change my character and behavior based on the people that I'm around and what I'm doing.

    27:16-27:20

You get me around Ben Mall, and I might start speaking with a little twang.

    27:21-27:25

If I'm even in the same room as Steve Zelsnack, yin's now, watch out.

    27:26-27:27

That's a slippy slope in that.

    27:29-27:30

I had to look that up.

    27:31-27:33

I'm not a Pittsburgh East guy.

    27:34-27:37

But you can imagine how dangerous that this can be for me, right?

    27:38-27:44

If I allow myself to be put in shady or precarious situations, I'll just roll with the punches.

    27:45-27:52

But being around people who swear or talk about their sin like it's no big deal, I'll passively agree and hold off on speaking God's truth.

    27:53-28:03

Now I'm not saying I won't have any control, but like James illustrated in verses 3 and Outside influences are around us and can eventually overpower us.

    28:04-28:08

Are you sailing your ship on a placid lake, able to guide it wherever you will?

    28:10-28:12

Or is your ship in a tsunami and you're just holding on for dear life?

    28:13-28:15

See, at that point, your rudder is useless.

    28:17-28:25

Just like watching your media, the people and places you frequent will have an effect on your heart, both in the short and long term.

    28:26-28:29

See, here at Harvest we have small groups that meet on various days of the week.

    28:29-28:31

We have volunteer outreaches, mission trips.

    28:32-28:41

In each one, we're surrounding ourselves with Christ followers, using one another to further our relationship with God, to fill our hearts up with those stores of good.

    28:43-29:30

But if you frequently are putting yourselves into precarious situations, thinking you're strong enough to resist temptation, you're playing with a deadly fire. You'll start filling your heart up with those stores of evil and it will become evident through your mouth. Now the last way that we can watch our mouths is by watching our walk. The supporting verse here is Proverbs 8 verse 20 through 21. I walk in the way of righteousness in the paths of justice, granting an inheritance to those who love me and filling their treasuries. See Proverbs 8 is about wisdom and its characteristics and these These two particular verses about wisdom exemplify the relationship between wise decisions, righteousness, and eventual rewards.

    29:32-29:37

I still find sanctification to be an amazing benefit once you put your faith in Jesus Christ.

    29:38-29:42

It's not easy, and more often than not it can be seen as a huge challenge.

    29:43-29:48

But how can we ease that challenge and understand how to become more Christ-like?

    29:49-29:54

Hopefully this is a no-brainer, but pursue fellowship with your Creator and Savior.

    29:55-30:00

When you seek God and His wisdom, it puts you on a path to His Son, Jesus Christ.

    30:02-30:03

Act and live out His examples.

    30:04-30:06

But you must be intentional in this effort.

    30:06-30:10

You can't just put the Bible up to your head and it will make you wise or holy.

    30:11-30:14

Just like putting on a costume doesn't make you a doctor or a mechanic.

    30:15-30:15

    It requires effort.

    30:17-30:20

But compared to the Old Testament days, we have it much easier.

    30:21-30:28

See God the Father tore the veil from top to bottom when Christ died on the cross, signifying that He is freely available for fellowship now.

    30:29-30:33

When you read His word and you pray to Him, God will reveal His will for us.

    30:34-30:38

1 Corinthians 2 talks about how the Holy Spirit comprehends the thoughts of God.

    30:39-30:43

And as Christians, that same Spirit lives within us.

    30:45-30:49

And along with understanding His will, fellowshipping with God grants us His wisdom.

    30:50-30:52

And what an incredible benefit there is in that.

    30:53-31:08

As Proverbs 8.20 through 21 says, "His wisdom is righteous and just, "leading to an inheritance of treasures, "allowing us to store up good things in our hearts." See, too often we come to God only when we're in deep trouble.

    31:08-31:13

He is our Savior, yes, but we treat Him like He's a get-out-of-jail-free card.

    31:14-31:15

    But let's avoid that.

    31:15-31:17

Let's go to God not when we're just in trouble.

    31:18-31:21

Let's go to Him when we want to praise Him and give Him thanks.

    31:21-31:24

Let's fellowship with Him daily and tell God, "Thank you.

    31:24-31:41

"Thank you for my church, my family, my kids, "my job, my friends, "and especially for giving your son to us." See, today we're gonna close in worship and this will be everyone's opportunity to use that tongue for good, to shout praises to the Lord our God.

    31:41-31:43

We know our tongues dominate us.

    31:43-31:47

They wreak havoc and are untamable, but you Lord enable us to conquer that.

    31:47-31:51

You filled our hearts with the Holy Spirit and that's what we wanna show.

    31:52-31:54

That's what we want to literally speak for us.

    31:55-32:00

Father God, I am amped right now to sing praises to you.

    32:01-32:06

I thank you for this time together for allowing us to challenge ourselves on the use of our tongues.

    32:08-32:13

Please give us wisdom daily to grow in our sanctification so that we may use our tongues for good.

    32:15-32:23

And Lord, I pray now you hear our shouts of praise to you and that they be a sweet melody to you, our eternal Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  • Pastor Jeff:

    00:42-00:45

This morning as Dan Thompson. Dan, would you make your way up here?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:45-00:47

    Don't welcome him yet, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:48-00:49

We're all going to do that at the same time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    00:50-01:13

But Dan and Alicia have been part of this church since before day one, and they serve faithfully in Arrow, which is our student ministry. They are youth group leaders. You work in the AV ministry, Alicia in the prayer ministry, and is there anything around here you guys are not involved in? And, you know, there church over the last couple of years, haven't there, Dan?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:13-01:13

    Oh yeah,

    Dan:

    01:14-01:14

    absolutely.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:14-01:22

And, you know, I was walking down memory lane looking at what the Lord's been doing in our church here, especially these last few weeks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:22-01:30

I remember when we were meeting at the chiropractor's office, and you remember we had enough money to buy the trailer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:30-01:34

And all we owned as a church, and some of you remember this, all we owned as a church was the trailer.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:34-02:29

We didn't have anything to put in it, but we had, it was like $1,200 or something for this trailer because we were doing the church in the box thing at the middle school and we had a trailer. That was it. We're meeting at the chiropractor's office. They were so gracious to let us meet there. And you remember that day, Dan, that they pulled the trailer in. We're all standing in the parking lot, huddled around this empty trailer, and we were like, "Thank you, God, for this empty trailer!" And we were just so thankful, rightfully so. Absolutely. So thankful because we knew that God was going to fill it. And a lot has has changed in our church over the last couple of years, but one thing that hasn't changed and one thing that will never change is our commitment to the Word of God, which is why I couldn't think of a better guy to kick off this exciting new chapter in the Life of Harvest Bible Chapel. So I would say get your Bibles and get ready to let God change you. Now, give a warm welcome to Dan Thompson.

    Dan:

    02:30-03:31

Thank you, Pastor Jeff. I do want to express my thanks to Pastor Jeff and the elders for asking me to preach again, and especially for being the one to kick us off in this new space. It is a huge privilege. And it's pretty amazing, as Pastor Jeff just outlined, what God has done in such a short period of time. But I have to be honest, I've been pretty nervous leading up to this, but not for the reasons you might think. Because I'm speaking up here, I am totally useless to the AV team in the back, which is kind of a little bit scary for me as the person who's been involved with AV for such a long period in time, on Sunday to be back. But even still, it is truly a great honor to be here with you today. I'm so glad to be part of this church that God is so clearly moving in and that God is moving in and through us. And so let's look at the Word together, but let me open us with a word of prayer. Father God, I pray Lord that your words would be heard today. That you would remove the distractions. The distractions in this room, the distractions in our mind, God.

    Dan:

    03:31-03:50

the distractions in our heart, God, that prevent us from hearing. I pray that you would use this time to cause us to trust you more and to obey your word. Thank you for this time. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen. So whether we were willing to admit it or not, everybody loves infomercials.

    Dan:

    03:50-05:42

You have the super convenient products like the Snuggie or the George Foreman Grill or OxiClean or Ronco Showtime rotisserie, set it and forget it. Right, that's right. Then there's the merchandise that can actually change your life from Proactiv to P90X, from the Clapper to the Bowflex, not available in stores. And my personal favorite are the absolutely absurd things like the Chia Pet or the ShamWow or the ever popular Shake Weight, each one with a money back guarantee. And on all those, you probably will need to use that money back guarantee. So why is it that we get sucked into these quagmires of marketing on those late nights? What is it about them that renders us paralyzed to change the channel on lazy Saturday mornings? Well, there's definitely a science behind all of it. But for the purposes of our time today, I am proposing that at least one of the reasons that infomercials work is that they promise immediate results and insist that you must act now. Deep down inside of us, each one of us is looking for a call to action. The call to action that I am raising for us today is that we should seek to obey God as often and as quickly as we can. I titled this sermon "Don't Delay, Act Now" and to demonstrate just a few reasons that we should strive for prompt obedience, we are going to look at 2 Kings 7. So open your Bibles with me to 2 Kings 7. And since that's a weird passage, I've got to probably give you a little bit of background on that. I figured in my other times preaching in the church. I preached on Romans 5, pretty basic, Genesis 3, all relatively understandable passages. This one's a little bit weirder. But the books of 1st and 2nd Kings are history books. They describe a time when God's people had kings. They begin with the end of David's reign, detail all of Solomon's reign, and then cover when the kingdom split in two.

    Dan:

    05:43-05:54

The northern kingdom was Israel, which eventually became the Samaritans, and the southern kingdom was Judah. And 2 Kings, that book ends after both kingdoms have gone into exile of their enemies.

    Dan:

    05:54-06:02

And not surprising from the name, these books focus on the kings of those two nations, most of whom are described as having done evil in the sight of the Lord.

    Dan:

    06:03-06:14

Our text picks up around 850 years before Christ, and we are in the reigns of Jehoram in the northern kingdom, Israel, and conveniently, a different Jehoram, in the south, in Judah.

    Dan:

    06:14-06:24

Well, these homonym kings may not ring any bells for most of us, but it may help to know that the northern Jehoram was the son of the infamous King Ahab and Queen Jezebel.

    Dan:

    06:24-06:30

We know a lot about these two wicked monarchs because of their interaction with God's mighty prophet, Elijah.

    Dan:

    06:30-06:40

In addition to miracles, Elijah brought the typical message of repentance to the northern kingdom of Israel, and he was hated by Ahab and Jezebel for it.

    Dan:

    06:40-06:55

But by the time our story starts, Ahab has been killed in battle by a random arrow, Elijah has already been charioted up into heaven, and Jezebel was anxiously awaiting the fulfillment of the prophecy that she would be eaten by dogs because of her evil decision making.

    Dan:

    06:55-06:59

So Elisha, with an "sh", is now the prophet on the scene.

    Dan:

    06:59-07:02

He was the protege of Elijah with a "j".

    Dan:

    07:02-07:06

Before his mentor ascended on high, he asked for a double portion of miracles.

    Dan:

    07:07-07:08

and eventually he gets exactly that.

    Dan:

    07:08-07:11

Twice as many miracles as Elijah, which is saying something.

    Dan:

    07:12-07:19

We pick up in chapter seven with Elisha and Jehoram, the northern king, in Samaria, which is the capital city of Israel.

    Dan:

    07:20-07:22

And it was literally under siege by the Syrians.

    Dan:

    07:23-07:27

As a result of the siege, this city is in the midst of a great famine.

    Dan:

    07:27-07:33

It was actually so bad that for food, the going rate for a head of a donkey, mm, appetizing, right?

    Dan:

    07:34-08:02

The going rate for a head of a donkey two pounds of silver. You just carry that in your back pocket, right? So that's a pretty terrible situation. And like his predecessor, Elisha wasn't typically winning friends or influencing people. In the previous chapter, the king actually cursed himself saying that he would be eaten for food if he didn't kill Elisha that day. Well, neither side of that promise actually happened. But all that is to say that by this point, when we pick up in our story, the people have given up hope of this siege ending. They just all think they're going to die.

    Dan:

    08:02-08:08

So with all that as introduction, let me ask Alexa to come and read this chapter for us because you're going to hear enough from me.

    Speaker 3:

    08:09-08:11

"Aleisha replied, 'Hear the word of the Lord.

    Speaker 3:

    08:11-08:12

This is what the Lord says.

    Speaker 3:

    08:12-08:35

About this time tomorrow, a say of the finest flower will sell for a shekel, and two say as of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.' The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, 'Look, even if the Lord should have opened the gates of the heavens, could this happen?' 'You will see it with your own eyes,' answered Aleisha, 'but you will not eat any of it.' Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate.

    Speaker 3:

    08:35-08:37

They said to each other, "Why stay here until we die?

    Speaker 3:

    08:38-08:41

If we say we'll go into the city, the famine is there, and we will die.

    Speaker 3:

    08:41-08:43

And if we stay here, we will die.

    Speaker 3:

    08:43-08:46

So let's go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender.

    Speaker 3:

    08:46-08:48

If they spare us, we will live.

    Speaker 3:

    08:48-08:52

If they kill us, then we will die." At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans.

    Speaker 3:

    08:53-09:01

When they reached the edge of the camp, no one was there, for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, "Look!

    Speaker 3:

    09:02-09:05

The king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us.

    Speaker 3:

    09:05-09:10

So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys.

    Speaker 3:

    09:10-09:12

They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives.

    Speaker 3:

    09:13-09:17

The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp, entered one of the tents and ate and drank.

    Speaker 3:

    09:17-09:21

Then they took silver, gold, and clothes and went off and hid them.

    Speaker 3:

    09:21-09:25

Then they returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also.

    Speaker 3:

    09:26-09:29

Then they said to each other, 'What we are doing is not right.

    Speaker 3:

    09:29-09:32

This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves.

    Speaker 3:

    09:32-09:35

If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us.

    Speaker 3:

    09:35-09:41

Let's go at once and report this to the royal palace." So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them.

    Speaker 3:

    09:41-09:49

We went into the Aramean camp and no one was there, not a sound of anyone, only tethered horses and donkeys and the tents left just as they were.

    Speaker 3:

    09:49-09:52

The gatekeepers shouted the news and it was reported within the palace.

    Speaker 3:

    09:52-09:57

The king got up in the night and said to his officers, "I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us.

    Speaker 3:

    09:58-10:05

They know we are starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the countryside, thinking, they will surely come out, and then we will take them alive and get into the city.

    Speaker 3:

    10:06-10:10

One of the officers answered, 'Make some men take five of the horses that are left in the city.

    Speaker 3:

    10:10-10:14

Their plight will be like that of all the Israelites left here.

    Speaker 3:

    10:15-10:18

Yes, they will only be like all these Israelites who are doomed.

    Speaker 3:

    10:19-10:25

So let us send them to find out what happened.' So they selected two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army.

    Speaker 3:

    10:26-10:36

He commanded the drivers, "Go and find out what had happened." They followed them as far as the Jordan, and they found the whole road strewn with the clothing and equipment the Arameans had thrown away in their headlong flight.

    Speaker 3:

    10:37-10:39

So the messengers returned and reported to the king.

    Speaker 3:

    10:39-10:42

Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans.

    Speaker 3:

    10:43-10:48

So a say of the finest flowers sold for a shekel, and the two say of barley sold for the shekel, as the Lord had said.

    Speaker 3:

    10:49-10:59

Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the The people trampled him in the gateway, and he died just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house.

    Speaker 3:

    11:00-11:23

It happened as the man of God had said to the king, 'About this time tomorrow, a say of the finest flower will sell for a shekel, and two sayers of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.' The officer had said to the man of God, 'Even if the Lord should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?' The man of God had replied, 'You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it.' And this is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, Thanks,

    Dan:

    11:23-11:38

Alexa. That's a mouthful, right? That's one of those passages that you're like, "Did I ever read that before?" And with history, it's sometimes difficult to figure out, "Why did God record this?" But this passage does have examples of things that we should do and some things that we shouldn't do.

    Dan:

    11:38-11:45

The text begins with a promise. If we look back at verse 1, now she read from the NIV, I'll read from the ESV, so there will be some differences.

    Dan:

    11:45-11:54

But Elisha said, "Hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord, 'Tomorrow about this time, a sea of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel.'" And he goes on.

    Dan:

    11:55-12:11

So since we're not experts in ancient currency, Elisha actually prophesied that there was going to be food available at a discounted price, right? Food so abundant that it actually could be sold cheaper than it normally would be. We just talked about how bad the famine was, right?

    Dan:

    12:11-12:15

So Elisha actually was prophesying that the famine was going to be over by tomorrow.

    Dan:

    12:16-12:21

Not only that the siege would be lifted, but that food would be so abundant, as I said, that it would be sold at a discounted price.

    Dan:

    12:21-12:24

This is not the way a siege typically ends, right?

    Dan:

    12:25-12:45

If the enemy should decide that they're done with the siege, right, they would leave, and then you would go out, you'd restore the fields, wait for the crops to grow, and eventually you'd have food again, but nothing was going to happen by tomorrow, let alone discounted flour. So what Elisha is promising here is a miracle from God.

    Dan:

    12:46-13:04

So it's not surprising then in verse 2 when we see some doubt from the king's advisor, that guy who's referred to as the captain on whom whose hand the king leaned. But we'll get back to him later. Here's where we get our first reason to act now. What's the worst that can happen? We pick up with the main characters of our story here. Look in verses 3 and 4 again.

    Dan:

    13:04-13:08

Now, there were four men who were lepers at the entrance to the gate.

    Dan:

    13:08-13:11

They said to one another, "Why are we sitting here till we die?

    Dan:

    13:11-13:17

If we say, 'Let us enter the city,' the famine is in the city, and we shall die there. If we sit here, we'll die here.

    Dan:

    13:18-13:20

So now let us go over to the camp of the Syrians or the Arameans.

    Dan:

    13:21-13:28

If they spare our lives, we shall live. If they kill us, we shall but die." These guys are in one of those moments of true clarity.

    Dan:

    13:29-13:35

Given their choices, the only real option that isn't guaranteed death is going and asking their enemies for help.

    Dan:

    13:36-13:43

Now, devoid of the context of their situation, asking your besieging enemies to give you some food doesn't sound like all that great of an idea.

    Dan:

    13:43-13:53

But when they assess the situation fully, they realize that in crossing enemy lines, the worst thing that can happen to them, well, they're gonna die, which is going to happen to them if they do nothing.

    Dan:

    13:54-13:55

And the best case scenario is that they live.

    Dan:

    13:56-14:00

That makes it a really easy choice to do something that on the surface sounds really hard.

    Dan:

    14:01-14:02

Well, how's this related to obedience?

    Dan:

    14:02-14:04

    First, what is obedience?

    Dan:

    14:04-14:07

Well, obedience is a willingness to submit to the authority of God.

    Dan:

    14:08-14:15

And sometimes, maybe even a lot of times, when God asks us to do something or to not do something, it doesn't sound like all that great of an idea.

    Dan:

    14:16-14:21

But these lepers remind us that if you assess the totality of what's going on, the choice becomes a lot easier to make.

    Dan:

    14:21-14:22

We all struggle with obeying God.

    Dan:

    14:23-14:26

I get that, because God asks us to do some pretty hard things.

    Dan:

    14:26-14:29

He commands us to admit that we are sinners in desperate need of a Savior.

    Dan:

    14:30-14:32

What an attack on my pride and my self-reliance.

    Dan:

    14:32-14:35

He desires that we put others first and die to ourselves.

    Dan:

    14:36-14:37

What about me and my needs?

    Dan:

    14:38-14:42

He calls us to live a life of purity in a totally impure and debaucherous world.

    Dan:

    14:43-14:44

Why can't I join in on all that fun?

    Dan:

    14:45-14:53

He wants us to be a bold light in an increasingly darkening domain and to speak out for what is right among those who love what is wrong.

    Dan:

    14:53-14:54

What will people think of me?

    Dan:

    14:54-14:56

And who am I to tell others that they're wrong?

    Dan:

    14:56-14:58

These are impossible asks of God.

    Dan:

    14:59-15:02

But look, in our broken world, we are sinners destined to die.

    Dan:

    15:03-15:04

If we do nothing, we will still die.

    Dan:

    15:05-15:06

If we live for ourselves, we still die.

    Dan:

    15:07-15:10

If we try to be good people without including God, we still die.

    Dan:

    15:10-15:15

So why are we resistant to obeying God, who offers so many promises of blessing, when we do obey Him?

    Dan:

    15:15-15:19

The worst thing that anyone can do to us is to cause us to die.

    Dan:

    15:19-15:22

And if we are believers in Christ, that sends us directly to heaven.

    Dan:

    15:22-15:23

    That's not even that bad.

    Dan:

    15:23-15:27

Matthew 10, 28 says, "And do not fear those who kill the body, but cannot kill the soul.

    Dan:

    15:27-15:30

rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

    Dan:

    15:31-15:40

When considering whether to obey God or not, act now by asking yourself, "What's the worst that could happen?" But most of our decisions to obey God don't come down to life and death decisions, right?

    Dan:

    15:40-15:44

So we don't always have that logical clarity that these lepers have of life versus death.

    Dan:

    15:44-15:49

Most of our decisions are good versus bad or good versus best.

    Dan:

    15:49-15:54

For these, I think it helps to take any aspect of God's character and add it into the equation.

    Dan:

    15:54-15:55

    Start with his love.

    Dan:

    15:56-16:01

Romans says, I think we have it up there, "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

    Dan:

    16:01-16:07

Shall tribulation or distress or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?

    Dan:

    16:07-16:10

As it is written, for your sake, we are being killed all the day long.

    Dan:

    16:10-16:13

We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

    Dan:

    16:13-16:17

No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

    Dan:

    16:17-16:30

For I am sure that neither death nor life nor angels nor rulers nor things present nor things to come nor powers nor height nor depth nor anything else in all of creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

    Dan:

    16:31-16:36

God's perfect, sacrificial, and protective love is certainly more than enough reason to trust Him.

    Dan:

    16:36-16:39

His commandments are for our benefit because He loves us.

    Dan:

    16:40-16:43

No one can stand against us when we obey Him because He loves us.

    Dan:

    16:43-16:44

    What about His wisdom?

    Dan:

    16:44-16:50

Proverbs says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." God literally created everything out of nothing in the universe.

    Dan:

    16:50-17:53

And you want to call into question His decision-making abilities as to whether He's capable of being trusted or not? And we could go on and on and look at his justice, his power, his mercy, his holiness. But it comes down to two options. Obey the sound of broken, sinful man, both deceptive and deceived, finite and powerless, or obey the voice of a perfect and holy creator of all things, both loving and lovable, infinite and all-powerful. The choice to act now and to do the hard things that God calls us to do becomes much easier when we consider what's the worst that can happen. In our story here in 2 Kings, that's what the lepers did. So they went to the camp of their enemies and this is where we find our second reason to act now. Good news must be shared. These lepers were greatly rewarded for their decision to act now. They went to seek help from the Syrians but they find that their enemies have actually left overnight and the Bible tells us why. In verse 6 it says, "They thought they heard the sound of armies and fled." But there were no actual armies out there. Kind of reminds me of the first half of Proverbs 28.1, the wicked flee when no one pursues, which we talked a lot about before.

    Dan:

    17:53-17:57

Our friends find that the enemies have left and they're cashing in on the spoils.

    Dan:

    17:57-18:01

But eventually they come to their senses and realize the second reason to act now.

    Dan:

    18:02-18:04

    Good news must be shared.

    Dan:

    18:04-18:05

    Look back at verse 9.

    Dan:

    18:06-18:07

They said to one another, "We are not doing right.

    Dan:

    18:08-18:10

This day is a day of good news.

    Dan:

    18:10-18:14

If we are silent and wait until morning, punishment will overtake us.

    Dan:

    18:14-18:30

Now therefore, let us go and tell the king's household." Proverbs 15.30 says, "Good news refreshes the bones." And in 25.25, it says, "Like cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country." Think about how good news works in your own life.

    Dan:

    18:31-18:33

When you get that promotion, what makes it sweeter?

    Dan:

    18:33-18:37

When your kid says that hilarious thing, how do you get the deepest laughs?

    Dan:

    18:37-18:40

When you get that good report back from the doctor, do you keep that to yourself?

    Dan:

    18:40-18:43

No, good news is better when it is shared.

    Dan:

    18:43-18:46

And when we are the bearers of that good news, then we're better off for it.

    Dan:

    18:47-18:57

for sharing it. We live in a world based upon the principle of sharing. Take breathing as an example. With every breath, we exhale carbon dioxide and we share that with the plants.

    Dan:

    18:57-19:02

And likewise, plants share oxygen with us in return. Well, you don't have to share.

    Dan:

    19:02-19:09

You could choose to put a bag over your head and selfishly keep all the carbon dioxide for yourself, but all you'd be doing is proving that the wages of sin is death.

    Dan:

    19:10-19:21

In all the ways that we are called to obey God, there is a theme that is prominent. God yourself and share with those in need. Go make disciples by sharing the good news.

    Dan:

    19:22-19:37

We need to understand that the reason that God blesses us is so that we can share with others, spiritually, physically, whatever blessings that we have received. So, act now in obeying God, because the good news must be shared. The lepers did this, and they sent a report back to the king.

    Dan:

    19:38-20:07

And the king's response is funny to me. Look at verse 12 again. "And the king arose in the night and said to his servants, 'I will tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know we are hungry and therefore they have gone out of the camp to hide themselves in open country thinking when they come out of the city we shall take them alive and get into the city." Remember, literally hours before, Elisha has promised that God is going to supernaturally end this siege, right? So when he actually sees, hears the good news, what's his response? Doubt.

    Dan:

    20:07-20:16

Complete conspiracy theory, in fact. It sounds crazy. He believes the whole thing is a trap, But thankfully, at least somebody's able to convince him that maybe we should check this thing out.

    Dan:

    20:16-20:21

And just like those infomercials, this sermon has an added bonus thrown in for free.

    Dan:

    20:21-20:24

I'll have an extra sub point. That is, doubt only wastes time.

    Dan:

    20:25-20:33

Instead of immediately rejoicing in the miracle that God provided, the king's doubt keeps the entire city locked up for a couple of hours.

    Dan:

    20:33-21:15

Those people are facing starvation. Like, being locked up for 10 minutes when you're hungry is torture. To be locked up for hours whenever you are starving is almost unbearable. So doubt really just wastes time and ultimately sometimes it can lead to disobedience. So here's three doubt signs that you're about to not obey. First doubt sign, you can't do the math. If we go back to verse 2, remember what the king's advisor said. He couldn't understand the promise of the siege ending and this abundance of food and how that was all going to add up. But remember, God is better at math than If you always need to understand the details of how God is going to work things out, then you're in danger of not obeying.

    Dan:

    21:15-21:18

Second doubt sign that you're about to not obey is you forget the past.

    Dan:

    21:18-21:24

The Jews had a history of God literally providing bread from heaven for them to sustain them for over 40 years.

    Dan:

    21:24-21:32

So in verse 2, when the king's advisor said that, "How could God do this even if he opened a window in heaven?" Did that whole manna thing escape him? He forgot all about that?

    Dan:

    21:32-21:40

As another example, as I just mentioned, the king heard Elijah's promise of the miracle only hours before, and yet when it's actually happening, he can't remember the past.

    Dan:

    21:41-21:43

So if you forget the past, then you're in danger of not obeying.

    Dan:

    21:44-21:48

And the last doubt sign that you're about to not obey is that you need to see it to believe it.

    Dan:

    21:48-21:51

The king was only able to open the city after he saw the proof.

    Dan:

    21:51-21:58

And I do acknowledge that there are times when we find ourselves needing confirmation from God about decisions that we need to make.

    Dan:

    21:59-22:01

But typically, obedience is not one of those things.

    Dan:

    22:02-22:09

If God said to do something or to not do something, then you don't need any further confirmation. You don't need to pray about that. Just do it.

    Dan:

    22:09-22:14

Just do what he says. So, if you need to see it to believe it, you are in danger of not obeying.

    Dan:

    22:15-22:50

All those points are to say is that don't delay, act now, obey God, and stop wasting everyone's time. This brings me to the final point. Trust God or miss the blessing. Let's look at verses 18 through 20 at the very end. "For when the man of God had said to the king," that's Elisha, "Two sieves of barley shall be sold for a shekel, and a sieve of fine flour for a shekel, about this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria." The captain had answered the man of God, "If the Lord himself should make windows in heaven, could such a thing be?" And he had said, "You shall see it with your own eyes, but you shall not eat of it." And so it happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gate, and he died.

    Dan:

    22:51-22:58

The king's advisor refused to trust God, and not only did he not get to share in any of the blessing of the food, but he was actually trampled to death by his own people.

    Dan:

    22:58-23:06

As a much less gruesome example of this point, I recently, about a month ago, took Ellie and Evie, my older two daughters, to go ice skating for the first time.

    Dan:

    23:06-23:08

I figured that both of them would absolutely love it.

    Dan:

    23:08-23:10

They love to dance, they love hockey.

    Dan:

    23:11-23:14

How could this be wrong? This is a great win. Shows what I know.

    Dan:

    23:14-23:23

My strong-willed child, my strong-willed four-year-old, Evie, was so worried that she would fall that she refused to even put a skate on the ice for most of the time that we were there.

    Dan:

    23:23-23:28

With some patient prodding, I did get her to put the skate on the ice, but then she wouldn't leave the door.

    Dan:

    23:28-23:30

She just looked like this. Sad little face looking up at me.

    Dan:

    23:31-23:42

So we stood there for about an hour. As it became closer and closer for the us for the time for us to leave, she finally decided to put both skates on the ice and to trust me to lead her around the rink.

    Dan:

    23:42-23:51

Well, not only did she not fall, but she really loved it. In the car on the way home, she said to me, "When's the next time we're going ice skating?" Because this was her favorite thing to do.

    Dan:

    23:52-24:28

My response was, "Well, just imagine how much more fun it would have been had you been on the ice for more than 10 minutes." So I don't know what obedience dilemma you find yourself in today, but in all those situations the principle still stands Trust God or miss the blessing There are different levels of this. Maybe you're struggling with elementary level obedience You're having difficulty humbling yourself by repenting and acknowledging your need for a Savior This is a hard thing But the great part about elementary level obedience is that the real hard work of a lifetime of perfectly obeying God has already been done Jesus already did this for us, and that's why we are able to receive the gift of forgiveness that He offers.

    Dan:

    24:29-24:31

The most known verse in the Bible is John 3.16.

    Dan:

    24:32-24:43

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but will have everlasting life." A much lesser known verse is the other side of that coin, two verses later in John 3.18.

    Dan:

    24:43-24:55

"Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." God made this world such that you don't have to obey. You don't.

    Dan:

    24:55-24:58

But just don't expect heaven if you won't believe in Christ.

    Dan:

    24:59-25:00

Trust God or miss the blessing.

    Dan:

    25:01-25:04

In this case, if you won't believe in Christ, then you will not get heaven.

    Dan:

    25:05-25:07

But the inverse is true. If you believe in Christ, then you receive heaven.

    Dan:

    25:07-25:11

Or maybe you're past the elementary level and are learning high school level obedience.

    Dan:

    25:12-25:12

    Today is Palm Sunday.

    Dan:

    25:13-25:27

Palm Sunday is the day where we remember how Jerusalem welcomed the King of Kings with shouts of "Hosanna in the highest." But Palm Sunday is also the day where we are warned about how quickly a person can go from saying "Glory to God" at the start of the week to "Crucify Him" before the week is over.

    Dan:

    25:27-25:35

I recently heard somebody say an interesting phrase. He said, "Most people in the church are vampire Christians." Vampire Christians? What does that mean?

    Dan:

    25:36-25:50

They're only interested in Christ's blood. This means that people are willing to submit to Jesus as Savior, but not as Lord. It isn't enough to worship God on Sunday and to abandon Him and his commandments throughout our week, unwilling to put our own sin to death.

    Dan:

    25:50-25:53

It's hard to give up our own personal sin monument.

    Dan:

    25:53-25:57

My gossip isn't really that big of a deal. I'd rather complain about it than doing something.

    Dan:

    25:57-26:01

Or I'm not going to give up my bitterness until they deserve forgiveness.

    Dan:

    26:01-26:08

Look, there are any number of choices here of sin that I could mention, but it all comes down to, do I do it my way or do I do it God's way?

    Dan:

    26:08-26:11

Moses said that he set before the people of God a blessing or a curse.

    Dan:

    26:12-26:16

A blessing for obedience and a curse for disobedience. It's really simple.

    Dan:

    26:16-26:20

The consequences of disobedience will always catch up with you. The Bible promises that.

    Dan:

    26:20-26:23

But I will attest to you that you will never be disappointed in obeying God.

    Dan:

    26:24-26:30

God is always faithful to bless our decisions when we obey Him, and especially when those are really hard decisions to make.

    Dan:

    26:31-26:35

But past that high school level obedience is graduate level obedience.

    Dan:

    26:36-27:15

Graduate level obedience is listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit in all aspects of our lives. I think here in this story, because God had promised the supernatural end of the famine, just the way that he was going to interact this thing and use these lepers who were essentially nobodies. It is my belief that the lepers in our story were spurred by the Holy Spirit to discover something God had already done. They didn't have to listen. They didn't have to go and come up with this plan. They could have just been totally hopeless and stayed there and died. 1 Corinthians 2 says, "Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

    Dan:

    27:16-27:22

And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom, but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

    Dan:

    27:22-27:37

God is speaking to us every single day as He is working out His plan of salvation in this world. He wants us to be a part of that. He wants us to share the gospel with others, to love sacrificially, and to trust Him in every moment that His ways are better than ours.

    Dan:

    27:37-27:41

He leads us in our conversations. He leads us in how we should spend our time and our money.

    Dan:

    27:42-27:46

He leads us to make the most of every opportunity. He even creates those opportunities.

    Dan:

    27:46-27:55

I had a friend at work who one day he was trying to really find ways that he could obey God, and he's trying to look for opportunities to trust that prompting of the Holy Spirit.

    Dan:

    27:55-29:09

And he was driving, and it was pouring down rain, and there was a guy just randomly standing out in the rain. And he said, "Oh man, I should go give that guy an umbrella." And he drove past. He's to go back and give that guy an umbrella. And he drove around, turned around and went back to the guy. By the time he did, somebody else had given him an umbrella. And the principle has stuck with me. If you don't want to listen to God, He doesn't need us, right? If we don't want to take part, the loss is ours, not God's. He doesn't need us at all. But He loves us too much to let us live without experiencing the blessings that He wants to give us. He to act now. If it is entrusting in God for salvation, do it. Get out of your own way and trust what Christ has done for you. Repent and turn to him. If there's some conviction over sin that's still a part of your life that you continue to struggle with, stop sinning. Stop doing that. Obey God. If you have this feeling, this nudge from the Holy Spirit to do something radically outside of your comfort zone, but completely in line with the character of God, Don't delay any longer. You will experience the blessing of God if you trust and obey him.

    Dan:

    29:09-30:28

And you will miss out if you don't. So my sales pitch to you today is don't delay, act now, obey God in everything. Consider what's the worst that can happen. Remember, good news must be shared and choose for yourself, trust God or miss the blessings that he desires to pour out on you. This isn't your typical limited time offer, but it's definitely one that you do not want to miss out on. Let's pray. Mighty God, you are so worthy to be trusted and obeyed, God. You could easily command obedience from heaven with all the power and all the authority that you have. You could make the rocks cry out praise as your word says, but God, you choose to allow us to obey. You want us to have a choice in our obedience. You want us to lovingly choose to trust you. God, I pray that you would change our hearts, remove our own selfish desires that are blocking us from trusting and obeying you. God, deal with us where we are. Whatever level of obedience we need to do, God, I pray that we would take a step of faith today. I pray that you would change our hearts to give us clarity as to what your voice is saying, that we would be in your word to understand it and not hear the cloud of lies that are around us in the I pray that we would obey your voice and yours alone.

    Dan:

    30:29-30:31

God, I thank you that you have given me this opportunity to speak.

    Dan:

    30:32-30:37

God, I pray that anything that I said was yours, God, and that people would only retain the things that are from you.

    Dan:

    30:37-30:41

God, thank you for this church, and I pray that you would just bless the rest of our service.

    Dan:

    30:41-30:41

    In

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:41-30:43

    your name we pray. Amen.

  • 00:42-00:45

So we're all gonna do a mental exercise this morning to get ready for this sermon.

    00:46-00:46

Are you all ready for this?

    00:47-00:52

I want you all to try and remember how you saw and experienced the world as a young child.

    00:53-00:56

Place yourself in the mindset of a five to seven year old.

    00:56-01:00

As some psychologists would say, get in touch with your inner child.

    01:00-01:03

I don't really know what that means, but try to do that this morning.

    01:03-01:08

I'm gonna give you a few scenarios and you're gonna tell me how you would have felt as a young child, all right?

    01:09-01:12

So imagine that your friend just broke your favorite toy.

    01:12-01:13

    How do you feel?

    01:13-01:15

    You feel angry, right?

    01:15-01:19

I remember when one of my friends broke my favorite Batman mask.

    01:19-01:21

He stepped on it and broke it right in half.

    01:21-01:23

And this wasn't just a minor deal.

    01:23-01:30

This was a huge thing to me because this was my precious possession and it made me feel like Batman.

    01:30-01:34

I remember when my friend irreparably broke my precious mask.

    01:34-01:38

I was filled with intense anger It went far beyond what was appropriate.

    01:39-01:39

    All right, next scenario.

    01:40-01:43

Imagine that you just got grounded on a very nice summer day.

    01:44-01:44

    How do you feel?

    01:45-01:46

    What emotion are you experiencing?

    01:46-01:47

    Angry, anything else?

    01:48-01:48

    Frustrated?

    01:48-01:49

    I would think sadness, right?

    01:50-01:54

You may be so overcome with your sadness that you may cry or beg your parents to let you go back outside.

    01:55-02:00

When I was seven years old, my dad caught me watching a Nickelodeon cartoon that I wasn't allowed to watch.

    02:00-02:01

And so he grounded me for several days.

    02:02-02:09

I remember just looking out my bedroom window with all the kids playing in the beautiful sunshine and rollerblading, and to be honest, I was devastated.

    02:09-02:13

I felt like I had been sentenced to prison for 20 years.

    02:13-02:17

All right, so go back to your teenage or your adult mind because you'll need it for the rest of this message.

    02:17-02:20

When we were kids, our emotions are very intense.

    02:20-02:21

    They're very clear cut.

    02:22-02:23

    They're very simple.

    02:23-02:27

We felt things very deeply, but we got over these emotions rather quickly.

    02:28-02:34

One minute you throw a temper tantrum on the floor, maybe you're pounding on your bed or pounding on the floor because you're really mad, And the next you're perfectly happy.

    02:34-02:39

But as you get older, your emotions become more nuanced, more complex.

    02:39-02:42

You may not even understand how you feel at times.

    02:43-02:50

Even though we experience the various emotions in different degrees, we've all experienced spiritual depression in some way.

    02:50-02:57

We've all had days when we felt emotionally numb, miserable, and maybe even hopeless.

    02:57-02:58

    Am I the only one?

    02:58-03:00

Please don't leave me hanging up here by myself.

    03:01-03:02

Let me ask you an important question.

    03:02-03:07

Is it wrong for a believer to struggle with sadness and depression?

    03:07-03:08

    What do we think?

    03:08-03:09

    No, it is not.

    03:10-03:13

Seasons of sadness are to be expected in a fallen and broken world.

    03:14-03:21

Throughout the Psalms, we see David and the other psalmist being brutally honest about their struggles with depression and sadness.

    03:21-03:26

The Apostle Paul said that he once despaired of life itself.

    03:26-03:34

Even our Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he was so stressed out, He was so anxious that literal drops of blood came from his forehead.

    03:35-03:37

Imagine having that kind of anxiety.

    03:37-03:46

So if our greatest spiritual heroes and our Savior Himself experience this kind of sadness, then we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we will as well.

    03:47-03:50

The question is, how will we handle this depression when it comes into our lives?

    03:51-03:55

Will we let it rule our hearts and our minds, or will we handle it God's way?

    03:55-04:01

Thankfully, the Bible has a lot to say about spiritual depression, where it comes from and how we should handle it.

    04:01-04:03

This morning we're going to dig into Psalm chapter 42.

    04:03-04:13

So if you have your Bibles, please open to Psalm chapter 42, which beautifully and honestly presents how we can find hope in the midst of feeling hopeless.

    04:14-04:15

    All right, Psalm chapter 42.

    04:16-04:20

"As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God.

    04:21-04:23

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

    04:23-04:25

When shall I come and appear before God?

    04:26-04:41

My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul, how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

    04:42-04:46

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?

    04:47-04:51

Hope in God, fresh elegant praise Him, my salvation and my God.

    04:51-05:00

"My soul is cast down within me, therefore I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon from Mount Miser, deep calls to deep at the roars of your waterfalls.

    05:00-05:03

All of your breakers and your waves have gone over me.

    05:03-05:10

By day the Lord commands His steadfast love, and at night His song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.

    05:10-05:13

I say to God, my rock, why have you forgotten me?

    05:14-05:17

Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of my enemy?

    05:17-05:54

Out of the deadly wound in my bones, my adversaries taunt me while they say to me, 'All this day long, where is your God? Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." So the heading of this psalm lets us know that it was written and performed by one of the sons of Korah. These were a group of priests who were assigned to the ministry of singing. So this psalm was most likely performed in public worship. And this song is also called a "mascal" in the heading. We're not exactly sure what a masculine is, but it means to make someone wise or to instruct in Hebrew.

    05:55-06:02

So through this psalm, God wants to instruct our minds about spiritual depression as well as engage our emotions.

    06:02-06:08

This background information reveals that God doesn't want us to keep silent when we struggle with depression.

    06:08-06:13

Instead, he wants us to lift up our hearts to him and in prayer and in psalm.

    06:13-06:40

But a question that we need to deal with before we move on to the text is where does depression come from? What are the sources of depression? So first I'm going to talk about the sources of depression that we will not be covering for the rest of this message even though they're very important. First there is personal sin. Personal sin. As a Christian, if you're living in habitual and unrepentant sin, you will experience a sense of sadness, grief, and maybe even depression.

    06:40-06:51

If you can constantly make the same sinful choice on an endless loop without even caring or feeling bad about it at all, you need to check your heart to see if you even know Christ and have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    06:52-06:54

So what is the solution to this kind of depression?

    06:54-06:56

Stop pretending like everything is okay.

    06:56-07:00

Confess your sin to the Lord and other believers and repent.

    07:00-07:07

Turn your back on your sinful thinking and sinful living and ask the Lord for His grace so you can change.

    07:07-07:14

It's important to understand that sin isn't always the source of depression, it is simply a common source of depression.

    07:14-07:20

Another source of depression that we will not be covering in this sermon is mental or psychological issues.

    07:21-07:25

I've talked to many Christians who don't believe in mental illness or clinical depression.

    07:25-07:28

And I have to really disagree with this line of thinking.

    07:28-07:34

If our body feels the effects of the fall and suffers various illnesses, so can our minds.

    07:34-07:41

In some cases, it would be beneficial for a believer to be prescribed medication for their bowels with clinical depression.

    07:41-07:43

So please, do not be ashamed.

    07:43-08:36

you need to travel down that pharmaceutical route in order to deal with your issues. However, I do believe that many doctors misdiagnose clinical depression and they're over eager in prescribing drugs. For someone suffering the spiritual depression, this medication will only mask that problem and it will actually get to the root of it. So, identifying the differences between spiritual depression and clinical depression is very difficult and it requires great wisdom. If some people actually struggle with both forms of depression at the same exact time. I don't want to spend much more time on this but let me just say that there are Christians who would greatly benefit from seeking help from a medical professional. So let's now talk about the sources of depression that this Psalm is speaking to. There's the unexpected trials and hardships of life. Maybe you experience a sudden death of a loved one and this loss just rocks your world and throws your emotional life into chaos.

    08:36-08:46

You have no idea what to do. You don't know how you can move on without this Maybe you're going through a marital problem or a financial issue right now and the future seems very uncertain.

    08:47-08:51

Another source of depression is the pressure and anxieties of life.

    08:51-08:54

I don't know about you, but for me, sometimes the weekly grind can just be soul crushing.

    08:55-08:59

You can just feel like you're crumbling under the intense weight of your busy schedule.

    08:59-09:04

Maybe work is really hectic for you right now and it seems like there's no end in sight to this busy season.

    09:04-09:12

Maybe you even wake up in the morning and you just want to go right back to sleep you don't want to deal with your endless list of responsibilities and tasks.

    09:13-09:59

Whatever the source may be in your life, you will have days, weeks, maybe even months where your soul feels cast down as this psalm describes. You may even feel like God has forgotten about you. You may feel like God has totally abandoned you. That life is pure chaos and God isn't in control. So what do you do when you experience these feelings? The psalm lays out four ways to fight against spiritual depression and we have them on your outline. First, how to fight against spiritual depression. Be honest with God about it. Be honest with God about it. Throughout this psalm, the writer is really honest with God about what he is feeling and experiencing. Listen to what he says in verse 9, "I say to God my rock, why have you forgotten?" Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever said that to God?

    09:59-10:06

God, do you even remember me? You know what's going on in my life right now? Now, obviously God never abandons us. He never forsakes us, but it can feel like that.

    10:06-10:10

at a time. There may be some days where it feels like you're just talking to no one.

    10:10-12:01

You're just praying to the ceiling and God isn't listening. Instead of suffering in silence or putting on that fake church smile on Sunday morning, be honest with God about what you're going through. Cry out to Him and tell Him how you feel because you know what? He already knows how you feel. He knows what emotions you're experiencing and what thoughts are already swirling around in your mind. You cannot find God's solution to your problem until you admit that there actually is a problem. And don't just keep your problem between you and the Lord. God has gifted you with an amazing church family. He wants you to share your struggles with them. If you're struggling with this kind of sadness today, at least talk to one other believer about it. The Christian life isn't a solo homework assignment. It's a community project. We aren't meant to grow or suffer alone. Never forget how much you need every single person in this room. You cannot do your life on your own no matter how much you might want to at times. Secondly, how to fight against depression. Desire and seek after the Lord. We have to desire and seek after the Lord. My favorite part of the psalm is the first two verses. "As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God, my soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?" According to these verses, this psalmist actually desires to know God more than to have his difficult circumstances solved. More than anything he wants to grow closer to his God and become more like him. Sadly we can often treat God like a divine vending machine. We hit the right buttons in prayer so we expect him to give us whatever we want and to solve all of our issues very easily. Instead we should passionately seek after the Lord in the midst of our struggles, ask him to make us more like him. Of course it's acceptable and encouraged to ask God to solve our problems and bring our requests to him.

    12:02-12:37

We're called in 1 Peter 5, 7 to cast all of our cares, all of our anxieties upon the capable shoulders of the Lord because he cares for us and he's the only one who can truly bear them on our behalf. At the same time, we must recognize that God has a purpose for what we are going. Your pain is not meaningless. God brings trials, suffering, and pain into our lives to smooth out our sinful edges and mold us into the image of Jesus Christ. Reject your natural instinct which is to lean back from this, resist it, get angry about it.

    12:37-13:22

Instead, lean into it. Lean in to God's discipline and to God's change and ask for his grace that you can become more like your Savior. The Lord will not always solve your problems the way that you want him to, but he will always pull you into an intimate and personal relationship with him if you're willing and submissive. So thirdly, how to fight against spiritual depression. Remember God's past faithfulness. Remember God's past faithfulness. We see this in verses 3 through 4. "My tears have been my food day and night while they say to me all the day long, 'Where is your God?' These things I'll remember as I pour out my soul, how I go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shout and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival.

    13:22-13:23

So what is the psalmist doing here?

    13:24-13:29

He's looking back at the awesome times of fellowship and worship that he experienced in the past.

    13:29-13:35

He's remembering the many times he walked into the temple to worship his God with his fellow Israelites.

    13:35-13:41

These joyful and uplifting memories from the past give him hope and encouragement in the present.

    13:41-13:49

Jay already said I am the youth pastor at North Park Church in Wexford, And one of my jobs is to lead a summer missions trip every single July.

    13:49-13:52

And to be honest with you, this really stresses me out.

    13:52-13:57

And to be clear, I have a lot of fun doing it and I really have a great time with my students.

    13:57-14:04

But being responsible for like 30 teenage lives for a whole week isn't the most relaxing activity in the world.

    14:04-14:12

Every single time I'm driving that 15 passenger van out of the church parking lot, I feel like I have to take in a huge breath that I can't let out until we get back.

    14:13-14:17

And I have all these anxieties and worries swirling around in my mind.

    14:17-14:19

Like what if I forget a kid at a rest stop?

    14:19-14:22

What if they get hurt on the work site?

    14:22-14:23

What if we get in a car accident?

    14:24-14:24

    What if?

    14:24-14:24

    What if?

    14:25-14:25

    What if?

    14:25-14:25

    What if?

    14:25-14:27

I have all these worries going on.

    14:27-14:34

And to help myself fight these anxieties, I look back at how God has provided for every single trip that we have embarked upon.

    14:34-14:41

Even though they didn't always work out the way I wanted or expected, God came through for us and He had a much better plan.

    14:41-14:48

This walk down memory lane helps to ease my anxiety and give me a peace that surpasses all understanding.

    14:48-14:51

It's the same with fighting against the depression that we feel a ton.

    14:51-15:00

Instead of wallowing in sadness and misery, we need to look back to see how God has provided for us and taken care of us every step along the way.

    15:00-15:05

We need to remember the good times of happiness and joy that we experienced with the Lord.

    15:05-15:15

When you feel like God has abandoned you or forgotten you, remember the closeness you you once felt as you engaged with Him in your personal devotions or on Sunday morning during worship.

    15:15-15:24

We need to remind ourselves that God has pulled us out of the pit of despair a countless number of times throughout our lives and He will continue to do so until the day of our death.

    15:25-15:32

Looking back at God's past faithfulness is the greatest way to build up your confidence in His present and future faithfulness.

    15:33-15:35

So finally, how to fight against spiritual depression?

    15:35-15:39

Preach the truth to yourself and hope in the promises of God.

    15:39-15:42

the truth to yourself and hope in the promises of God.

    15:43-15:50

This psalmist actually preaches an important message to himself in order to get himself out of this spiritual and emotional funk.

    15:50-15:56

Listen to what he says again in verse 5, "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?

    15:56-16:08

Hope in God, for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God." Now, this short sermon must be really important because he repeats it word for word in verse 11 to close out the psalm.

    16:08-16:12

So what is the point of this important message that the psalmist is giving himself?

    16:12-16:16

He's essentially saying this to himself, "Why are you so depressed?

    16:16-16:19

Why are you giving yourself over to misery and hopelessness?

    16:20-16:31

Choose to hope in the character and promises of your great God and Savior." We need to preach a similar message to ourselves when we're struggling with spiritual depression and sadness.

    16:31-16:36

Because instead of preaching the truth to ourselves, we tend to listen to the lies of our inner critic.

    16:36-16:37

Do you know what I mean by our inner critic?

    16:38-16:39

    We all have one.

    16:39-16:44

It's that voice that constantly tries to condemn you and make you feel like garbage.

    16:44-16:52

It's that voice whenever you're going through a spiritual dry spell and God feels very distant that says to you, "God doesn't care about you.

    16:52-16:53

He is not here for you.

    16:54-17:03

You are on your own." When you're going through a trial and you feel like your faith is hanging on by a thread, the inner critic gets in your face and says, "Just give up.

    17:03-17:05

There is no point behind your pain.

    17:05-17:06

    It's meaningless.

    17:06-17:07

    Life is chaos.

    17:08-19:33

nothing. Whenever you make a mistake, whenever you sin and do something you know you shouldn't do, the inner critic just rubs this mistake in your face, says you're such a failure, you're never gonna change. God's disgusted with you, he wants nothing to do with you. These false messages, these lies can be debilitating and disheartening if we let them. In the 1960s, one of my favorite preachers of all time, Martin Lloyd-Jones, wrote a very helpful book called Spiritual Depression. Listen to what he has to say about dealing with your inner critic and preaching the truth to yourself. Have you realized that most of your unhappiness in life is due to the fact that you are listening to yourself instead of talking to yourself? The essence of this matter is to understand this self of ours, this other man within us, this inner critic has got to be handled. Do not listen to him. Instead, speak to him, condemn him, exhort him, encourage him, remind him of what you know instead of listening placidly to him and allowing him to drag you down and depress you. For this is what he will always do if you allow him to be in control. Please do not listen to the lies of Satan and your inner critic. Shut them down with the truth of God's Word and drown out their worthless voices with the beautiful and life-giving words of Scripture. When you hear the inner critic, throw a Bible verse back in his face. The word in your mind so you can be ready to do the spiritual battle. We need to constantly remind ourselves of the simple yet deep gospel message and the unbreakable promises of God. Never forget that you are a loved child of God, has been cleansed from your sins by the blood of Christ. You've been adopted into his family. That God promises to never leave you or forsake you. He promises to do everything for your ultimate good. He even uses those bad things to make you more like Christ. That is your ultimate good. He has given you the Holy Spirit to strengthen you in these moments of weakness and comfort you in the midst of disappointments of life. You know it's hard for me to say this as a preacher but the most important sermons you will ever hear are the ones you preach to yourself in the midst of trial and hardship. So instead of giving in, teach yourself the truth. I know in a room this size that many of us are struggling with spiritual sadness and depression right now. You may feel like you're sinking in sorrow and you can't swim back up to the surface to catch your breath.

    19:33-20:09

But please know this morning, there is hope in Jesus Christ and you will make it the other side of this struggle. I don't want to minimize your pain but I also don't want to maximize the fears and the false messages that you're believing right now. I instead want to point you to Christ and the never-ending supply of joy that he provides. Instead of focusing on the magnitude of your problems, choose to fix your eyes upon the immensity of your God. We'll have a more accurate view of our problems when we begin to comprehend the bigness of our God. When we have a small view of God, our problems are blown out of proportion.

    20:10-21:10

But when we have a big view of a God that we cannot completely understand, our problems begin to shrink down and seem much more manageable. Small God, big problems. Big God, small problems. Do that with me. Small God, big problems. Big God, small problem. Others of us aren't struggling with this kind of sadness right now, but I can guarantee you that it's coming. I don't know when it is. It could be next week, it could be next month, it could be next year. Regardless of when it comes, you have to be ready. You need to root yourself on the solid rock of Christ and His gospel that the rough ways of circumstances and emotions will not be able to move you. Let's pray. Father, all of us are going through something right now, whether it's big or whether it's small. We all struggle with trusting in you. We all struggle with believing that you are enough even though you are more than enough for us. It would help us to remember that we are your children and you love us more than we can possibly imagine. Your word tells us that you love us with the same intense love that you have for your one and only son.

    21:10-21:22

How awesome is that? Well, there may be someone in this room who's thinking about suicide, Lord. Maybe someone in this room who doesn't think they can make it another day. I pray that you would come alongside them, point them to the truth, and you'd comfort them.

    21:23-21:25

There's many people in this room who are struggling with depression, Lord.

    21:25-21:29

I pray they would take this sermon to heart, and walk in the joy that you alone provide.

    21:29-21:31

We thank you for all that you do for us.

    21:31-21:33

    In Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Discussion
Read Psalm 42

  1. What stood out to you from the message? What convicted or encouraged you?

  2. According to Psalm 42, how can we find hope in the midst of feeling hopeless?

  3. What does it mean/look like to preach the gospel to yourself on a daily basis? Why is this so important?

  4. Why are we often tempted to act fake around other Christians and pretend like everything is fine? How can we become a more transparent group of believers?

    All right, welcome.

    00:30-00:31

And that was a funny joke.

    00:32-00:34

I laughed for a long time about that.

    00:36-00:39

And it was my uncle, so I'll admit who it was.

    00:40-00:41

    Most of that was true.

    00:42-00:44

It wasn't the next day, but it was several hours.

    00:45-00:46

And I actually did feel a little bit bad.

    00:48-00:52

I did feel a little bit bad after it, but I did laugh for a long time.

    00:53-00:54

You should have just asked Erin.

    00:54-00:55

She saw right through it from the beginning.

    00:56-01:01

All right. Before I get started, I just want to say I am humbled to be here.

    01:02-01:07

I do not take it lightly to bring the gospel. This is something I've never done before.

    01:08-01:15

And most people are always, "Hey, you give the announcements, it's great." That's a lot different giving the announcements than it is getting up here and telling you what the Bible says.

    01:15-01:18

The announcements I can get wrong, and nobody cares.

    01:19-01:33

So this is a little bit more important, and I want to, on behalf of Mike, Rich, and Justin, I want to say thank you to Jeff for the past six months, for putting your faith in us to bring the message, and I hope we've brought honor to you and honor to God.

    01:34-01:37

And I want to say thank you very much for the training that we've had.

    01:37-01:50

And church, trust me, after seeing what Jeff does behind the scenes, the passion and the commitment that he puts into preaching, we can all rest assured that he's putting everything he has into this church and into the gospel, into each and every person here.

    01:51-01:51

    So Jeff, thank you.

    01:53-01:54

All right, before we get started, let's pray.

    01:56-01:57

Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for this day.

    01:58-02:01

I want to ask you to please speak through me.

    02:02-02:05

Don't allow my words to come out, but allow your words.

    02:06-02:15

Father, if there's somebody here that has not received you as their Savior, please do not let them leave this building today without getting that taken care of.

    02:16-02:18

I ask you to bless this day and bless this sermon.

    02:19-02:20

    In Jesus' name, amen.

    02:21-02:29

Like Jeff said, my wife and I are the small group coordinators at the church, and that's something that we never had at our other churches.

    02:30-02:32

And so coming here was kind of a new thing.

    02:33-02:35

It was something that we kind of got asked to do.

    02:35-02:38

We weren't really expecting to ever be in this position.

    02:39-02:40

And it's been such a blessing to us.

    02:41-02:48

And if you're not in a small group, please come see me afterwards, because I can go on and on about the blessings of what small group will do for you personally.

    02:49-02:52

But that's what I do under the name Harvest Bible Chapel.

    02:52-02:55

That's what we do inside the church for the church.

    02:56-02:59

Some of you may not know what I do outside of the church.

    03:00-03:02

I work for my father, who's here today.

    03:03-03:04

I'm gonna talk about you, Dad.

    03:07-03:22

But I've now gotten to a position in our company that my dad has given up, my brothers and I also, or my brothers work for my dad as well, and we all have a part ownership in the company, and we have a vice president position, which means nothing because my mom runs everything.

    03:23-03:23

    (Laughter)

    03:26-03:29

That is not where I started at all.

    03:29-03:30

That is not where I started.

    03:30-03:33

I have to take you back 13 years ago to when I started.

    03:34-03:38

I was 18 years old, coming out of high school, no idea what I wanted to do in life.

    03:38-03:42

And my dad was not going to pay for me to go to college to major in Undecided.

    03:43-03:47

If that's you today, I'm sorry, but my dad was not paying for that.

    03:47-03:53

So, he told me, "Hey, come to work for me until you know what you want to do." I'm still waiting to figure out what I want to do.

    03:54-03:55

But it's been pretty good so far.

    03:57-04:06

So I came to work for him, and I thought in my mind, I was going to spend the summer goofing around, all my buddies weren't going to college till September, I thought this was going to be great, going to be the summer of awesome.

    04:07-04:14

It was not, because my dad gave me a week off from school and I had to go to work, and rent was due at the end of June.

    04:15-04:15

    (Laughs)

    04:16-04:29

But then I thought, "Okay, this will be great, because by the end of summer, I'm going to have this cool car, I'm going to have all this cool stuff, and all my buddies are going to be jealous of me." Again, I was wrong, because it's really hard to make a car payment on $9 an hour.

    04:30-04:30

    (Laughter)

    04:30-04:31

    And again, rent was due.

    04:33-04:37

So you see, what my dad did was my dad gave me an entry-level position.

    04:37-04:39

I was the bottom of the barrel.

    04:39-04:41

Everybody told me what to do.

    04:41-04:45

I was the youngest brother, I was the youngest guy in the company, I was the new guy in the company.

    04:46-04:47

I had to start at the bottom.

    04:48-04:52

But you could not deny that I was an employee of my company.

    04:53-04:56

So my dad gave me a job, and that was it.

    04:57-05:02

But beyond that, it was up to me to take the tools that my dad had given me and learn how to use them.

    05:03-05:05

Follow the path that my dad had put down for me.

    05:05-05:09

Follow the path that my dad had laid out for me to become successful in the company.

    05:10-05:13

My dad could not force me to work hard.

    05:14-05:18

My dad could not force me to become very good with the tools that we use.

    05:20-05:25

Now he'll tell this story differently that I still don't work quite hard enough, but he's not up here preaching today, I am.

    05:26-05:28

So I get to say what I want.

    05:29-05:34

No, but I don't say it publicly enough, "Dad, thank you for what you've done for us.

    05:36-05:45

And thank you for laying out that path for us and making our lives successful that way." So like I said, it was up to me to take those steps.

    05:45-05:49

It was up to me to follow that path that was laid out before me.

    05:50-05:56

And even still to this day, 13 years later, I still go to my dad and ask for advice, ask for questions.

    05:56-06:00

My dad is still leading us along as we try to become more successful.

    06:01-06:03

But again, my dad could not force that.

    06:04-06:05

I could have, "Hey, I'm an employee.

    06:06-06:07

    I like $9 an hour.

    06:08-06:14

I'm going to live like that forever." I probably would have gotten my beautiful wife that I have now, but that's okay.

    06:15-06:23

I could have stayed there, and I could have been just a mediocre employee, but I was an employee and you couldn't deny me of that.

    06:23-06:24

But I wanted more than that.

    06:24-06:26

I wanted to become successful in the company.

    06:28-07:03

When I tell that story, in my mind it's going to relate to what we're going to speak about today because God too gave us a free gift and all we had to do was accept that. But then we had to put out an effort as to whether we were going to be successful in our Christian walk. And you might say, "Ryan, whoa, that sounds like legalism. That sounds like works-based salvation." No, legalism and works-based salvation tells you you have to do that before you're saved. You see, Christ died on the cross for us and in that moment when we accept that gift we are saved.

    07:03-07:35

Nothing we have to do on our own. Why we are here on earth. We have work to do. We have to prove our salvation. We have to make every effort to have a successful walk with God and a successful Christian life and a Christian relationship with God. It's up to us to start taking those steps and just as my dad laid out the path for my brothers and I to become successful in our company. Christ too has laid out the path for us. But God cannot make us start walking that path.

    07:36-07:43

We have to decide whether we are going to take the steps and we're going to follow Christ and we're going to keep our eyes on Christ. God can't force us to do that.

    07:44-07:52

He wants us to. He's already done the work. It's up to us now to prove our salvation and do our work for Christ.

    07:54-08:02

Because you see, if all the gospel is to you is punching your ticket to heaven and avoiding hell, then you are not understanding the gospel.

    08:03-08:04

You see, there's three parts of salvation.

    08:05-08:09

You see, there's justification, there's sanctification, and there's glorification.

    08:10-08:12

Justification is what God did for us on the cross.

    08:12-08:14

That was the past, that's been done.

    08:14-08:16

Our sins were paid on the cross.

    08:18-08:21

When we become saved, that's what God did on the cross.

    08:21-08:23

That's the past, it's been done.

    08:24-08:28

And a lot of times what we want to do is we want to skip from justification down to glorification.

    08:29-08:31

And that's the future, that's the ultimate prize.

    08:31-08:34

That's when we get to heaven, that's when we get to spend eternity with Christ.

    08:35-08:37

'Cause that is the ultimate goal, is that we do want to go to heaven.

    08:38-08:41

We want to escape the death of hell, and the pain of hell.

    08:43-08:51

But you see, what we so often want to do, and what so many Christians want to do, and so many churches today wanna do, we wanna skip sanctification.

    08:52-08:56

And that is us in a process becoming more Christ-like.

    08:57-09:00

That is what we are doing right here and right now.

    09:01-09:05

We have to make the effort to become sanctified.

    09:06-09:09

And that's what our passage is gonna talk about today.

    09:10-09:17

So everybody, if you turn in your Bibles or if you have something with your Bible on it, Turn to 2 Peter 1, verses 3 through 10.

    09:18-09:25

And as you're turning there, I want you to understand that when Peter wrote this, God had revealed to him that he was about to die.

    09:25-09:27

His life was about to end.

    09:27-09:33

So this was the last letter that Peter got to write to the church at the time, Church of Asia Minor.

    09:34-09:35

So I want you to kind of picture that.

    09:36-09:40

If somebody, if there was a way that somebody had reeled to you, hey, next Tuesday, you're out.

    09:40-09:41

    You're going to heaven.

    09:42-09:44

Life is done for you next Tuesday.

    09:45-09:47

So you have to picture yourself, what am I gonna tell my children?

    09:48-09:49

What am I gonna tell my wife?

    09:49-09:50

What am I gonna tell my parents?

    09:50-09:53

What am I going to leave on this earth?

    09:53-09:59

What are the most important things that if you get nothing out of my life, this is what I want you to understand.

    09:59-10:02

And so that is how Peter was writing this letter.

    10:03-10:05

He's going, listen, my time is short.

    10:05-10:09

I don't have a lot of time left, so please understand these truths before I leave.

    10:09-10:13

If there's nothing that you get out of this, please understand these truths.

    10:14-10:16

So have that in your mind as we read this.

    10:17-10:19

All right, picking up in verse number three.

    10:20-11:14

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in this world of a sinful desire. So we pause there for a minute. So Peter's talking to people that are already saved. They understand, they have access to the divine power that we have through God. Because we've accepted the free gift of salvation, we now have this access to a power that God may at times use through us. We have the power to defeat sin. We have the power that we've escaped death because of Christ. So that's what he's talking about in those verses. Picking up back in verse This next phrase is where I want to focus our sermon today.

    11:15-11:29

"For this reason, because you were saved, make every effort." And I talked to Jeff about this, and he told me that the Greek, if you translate it in the Greek, it literally means, "Make every effort." That translates perfectly.

    11:30-11:34

Not make a little effort, not make some effort, make every effort.

    11:36-11:56

Make every effort to supplement or add to your faith with virtue, that's moral excellence, and virtue with knowledge, that's a spiritual discernment, and knowledge with self-control, this is a hard one, that's a spirit-empowered ability to say no to sin, and self-control with steadfastness.

    11:57-11:59

Steadfastness is perseverance in our walk with Christ.

    12:00-12:05

And steadfastness with godliness, becoming Christlike, In godliness with brotherly affection.

    12:06-12:12

That's the same love you would have for your own kin, but extending that to your brother or sister in Christ.

    12:13-12:14

    In brotherly affection with love.

    12:14-12:16

That's agape love, that's unconditional love.

    12:16-12:18

That's the love that Christ has for us.

    12:19-12:22

There's nothing we do that makes God love us more.

    12:22-12:23

    He already ultimately loves us.

    12:23-12:25

He paid the price for us on the cross.

    12:27-12:28

    It's unconditional.

    12:29-12:31

But man, those are some powerful tools, are they not?

    12:32-12:33

    Those are hard tools.

    12:34-12:35

    Characteristics of Christ.

    12:36-12:37

    That's who Christ is.

    12:38-12:42

And we are to make every effort to become like that.

    12:43-12:49

And I don't want to spend a lot of time just on those characteristics alone because I want to see what the results are of those characteristics.

    12:49-12:57

But I urge each and every person here, go home, study those, make those your bucket of tools.

    12:59-13:04

go home, master them, become students of those.

    13:04-13:09

Because I promise you they're gonna come up every day and you're gonna need them every day.

    13:09-13:12

And you might say, "Hey, I'm good at some of these." Are you?

    13:13-13:15

Are you a virtuous person when somebody cuts you off in traffic?

    13:17-13:18

'Cause I don't know if I always am.

    13:19-13:22

Are you always able to say no to sin?

    13:25-13:27

Are you persevering in your walk with Christ?

    13:28-13:40

being steadfast? At times, yes. But what happens when somebody makes fun of you at work about being a Christian? Or what happens when somebody wants to take your life because you're a Christian?

    13:42-13:56

And sometimes we don't experience that in Wexford here. But the day may come when you have to stand up when somebody's pointing a gun at you and say, "Denounce Christ or or you're gonna die, are you able to persevere through that?

    13:59-14:06

These are the tools that God gave us if we wanna have a successful walk and a successful relationship with God.

    14:07-14:08

And that should be our desire.

    14:08-14:15

Every person's desire is to be as successful as we can be in our walk with Christ.

    14:16-14:22

Effort is defined by Webster as a vigorous and determined attempt.

    14:22-14:30

A vigorous, determined, I'm determined to make every single one of these characteristics who I am.

    14:31-14:34

Those characteristics are going to start defining who I am.

    14:35-14:38

Because I'm a child of God and these characteristics are who God is.

    14:40-14:42

So I want to be more Christ-like.

    14:42-14:44

I want to be like God.

    14:46-14:48

And you should never stop trying.

    14:49-14:53

You have to constantly make that attempt, constantly make the effort.

    14:55-15:03

If we want to do more than just punch our ticket to heaven like I said earlier, then you must continually be growing in these qualities.

    15:04-15:07

You must make these qualities everything.

    15:09-15:12

And again, I encourage you, go home, study these.

    15:14-15:14

    Figure out where they are.

    15:15-15:16

I'm telling you, they are all through the Bible.

    15:17-15:19

All of these are everywhere through the Bible.

    15:19-15:21

    What's the Strong's Concordance?

    15:21-15:23

It's like five Bibles put together.

    15:23-15:25

Open that up and just look up virtue.

    15:25-15:27

See how many verses are under there.

    15:27-15:31

Look up all those and see how many verses the Bible talks about.

    15:33-15:43

And I'm telling you, you're going to grow if you start studying those and practicing those and not just becoming knowledgeable, but putting them in practice, using them.

    15:43-15:44

You're going to grow in Christ.

    15:46-15:47

    That was all my intro.

    15:49-15:58

Now, what I really wanna discuss and what I really wanna get into is what are the results when every effort is applied in our salvation?

    16:00-16:05

Number one, making every effort results in spiritual maturity.

    16:06-16:07

    Let's look at verse eight.

    16:08-16:14

For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of God.

    16:16-16:20

You know, when I first met my wife, I think we were 18 years old.

    16:21-16:22

We dated for a couple years.

    16:23-16:24

I don't even know if it was that long.

    16:24-16:26

    A couple years, maybe.

    16:27-16:28

We were married at 20 years old.

    16:30-16:31

And we've now been married 11 years.

    16:32-16:34

Very proud and thankful to be married to my wife.

    16:35-16:53

You know, but I look back at year one, it makes us chuckle and sometimes we talk about this and how, you know, I know a lot of you in here are newly married, and I know a lot of you have been married longer than I have, and so I get that, but when I look at year 1 and I look at year 11, year 1 was such an infatuation.

    16:54-16:57

You know, you thought the world could be conquered with love.

    16:58-17:00

Love does not pay the heat bill, okay?

    17:01-17:01

    Money does.

    17:04-17:07

Love doesn't always solve the problem.

    17:08-17:18

You know, it's an infatuation that we had with each other, and I love my wife, but when I look back at it, it was much more immature of a marriage than what it is now at year 11.

    17:20-17:22

You know, and why is that?

    17:22-17:24

Because we grew with each other.

    17:24-17:25

We got to know each other.

    17:25-17:36

We put time into our marriage because there was this desire for us to get to know each other, to have a strong relationship that we could conquer anything as long as we were together.

    17:38-17:43

And we went through hard times, we went through good times, we had children, the hardest thing of all.

    17:43-17:44

That'll turn your life upside down.

    17:46-17:57

But I love my children, and I love my wife, and our marriage would not have been what it is today if we had not put the time and the effort into our marriage, to get to know each other.

    17:59-18:01

And that's exactly what God is telling us to do.

    18:02-18:05

Get to know Him, spend time with Him.

    18:05-18:10

So many times we want to do as Christians is just go, hey, I'm like, I'm not good at reading my Bible.

    18:10-18:13

I'm not good at praying, you know, but I, but hey, I want to be spiritually mature.

    18:14-18:16

And you always want to be like, how much time have you put into it?

    18:17-18:17

    What do you do?

    18:17-18:19

Do you sit down and read your Bible?

    18:19-18:20

    And you just go, okay.

    18:21-18:25

But if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of God.

    18:25-18:26

    All right, good set.

    18:26-18:27

And you go on with your day.

    18:29-18:30

    But do you study that?

    18:31-18:33

Do you look into what does that mean?

    18:35-18:38

How is that affecting my daily life?

    18:40-18:54

You know, one of the best answers I got was actually from Rich Sprunk, who preached a couple weeks ago, and it was so simple, and I always kind of had this idea in my head that's like, oh man, I'm not that educated of a guy.

    18:54-18:55

    I didn't go to college.

    18:55-18:57

I don't always understand the Bible.

    18:59-19:04

Sometimes it's hard for me to read, and I said to Rich, hey, how do you do that?

    19:04-19:05

Like, Rich is a smart guy.

    19:05-19:11

If you've ever talked to Rich, Rich is super smart and he knows the Bible and I love Rich and I love his knowledge.

    19:13-19:17

And he said to me, he's like, "Ryan, you're being dumb." I was like, "Wow, that's hard."

    19:17-19:18

    (audience laughing)

    19:19-19:22

He's like, "The Bible was written by simple men.

    19:23-19:24

"Not always was it educated men.

    19:25-19:34

"They were average men that wrote the Bible." He said, "Start on page one and read it "and you'd be surprised what you learn." And it was like, man, that's so simple.

    19:35-19:36

    Just read it.

    19:37-19:39

Just open it and want to learn.

    19:40-19:41

    Actually read it.

    19:41-19:42

Don't just read it because that's what you have to do.

    19:43-19:43

Hey, I got my check mark.

    19:43-19:44

    I read my Bible today.

    19:45-19:47

    No, pour yourself into it.

    19:47-19:49

Jeremiah 29, 13 tells us this.

    19:51-20:00

"You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart." When you make every effort, God will reveal himself to you.

    20:00-20:08

When you come after God, when you get down on your knees and cry out to God and spend the time in the Bible, God will reveal himself to you.

    20:08-20:12

He will give you the mind to interpret what he is saying.

    20:13-20:24

And in today's world, there is no excuse for us to go, "Hey, I don't know what this means." Just in this church alone, the elders and Jeff that we have, you can go to them anytime.

    20:24-20:26

I'll send you all of their numbers if you want it.

    20:26-20:28

And you can text them at any time.

    20:28-20:29

    (audience laughing)

    20:31-20:37

And Google, and I know like Mike said a couple weeks ago, not always does Google have the best answers, but so what?

    20:38-20:43

Read it, figure out if it's right or wrong, and then read something, ask somebody.

    20:44-20:55

There's no excuse for us not knowing the Bible, and I've been guilty of this myself, and I've had to put this into practice, especially if I was gonna get up here and tell you you had to do it, I had to do it too.

    20:56-21:05

And I'm telling you, just in the past couple years of me getting into the Word and studying and pouring myself into it, it's changed my life.

    21:05-21:08

And I understand a lot more than I thought I was going.

    21:10-21:14

So making every effort results in spiritual maturity.

    21:15-21:21

Point number two, making every effort keeps us from living in habitual sin.

    21:21-21:25

Notice I said habitual sin, and I'll explain that more in a minute.

    21:25-21:26

    Let's look at verse nine.

    21:27-21:34

Whoever lacks these qualities, he is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he is cleansed from his former sins.

    21:36-21:39

When I say habitual sin, I'm not talking about a stumble.

    21:40-21:42

As humans, we are always going to stumble.

    21:42-21:46

We're gonna have moments where we go, oh man, I messed up there, I messed up there.

    21:46-21:49

I'm talking about a sin that controls your life.

    21:49-21:51

    It's a stronghold.

    21:51-21:53

Satan's got his foot on your throat and he's not letting up.

    21:55-21:58

and your own flesh is taking over.

    21:58-22:02

Your own flesh is controlling you.

    22:02-22:05

And that sin controls every aspect of your life.

    22:06-22:13

It controls your relationships, your work, your marriage, your relationship with your children, your relationship with friends, everything.

    22:14-22:15

It borderline defines who you are.

    22:17-22:20

It's a stronghold, it's something you can't get out from under.

    22:22-22:27

And by the way, you thinking that that sin defines you is a lie of the devil.

    22:28-22:31

Because if you're a born again believer in Christ, that is what defines you.

    22:31-22:33

That sin will never define you.

    22:33-22:37

Even though Satan will tell you over and over and over again, no, that's who you are.

    22:37-22:39

Don't you forget, that's who you are.

    22:39-22:41

No, you're not, you're a child of God.

    22:43-22:51

You know, in an illustration that I was trying to come up with how to explain this, and I actually found it on Google.

    22:51-22:51

    (laughs)

    22:53-22:54

    Sometimes Google does help, Mike.

    22:55-22:55

    (laughs)

    22:57-22:59

I actually looked it up from another pastor, so I'm stealing it from him.

    23:01-23:02

The Christian life is like swimming against the current.

    23:03-23:05

Okay, and I want everybody to picture a lazy river at a water park.

    23:05-23:08

We all been to one of those lazy rivers, they're awesome.

    23:08-23:11

You just sit on a raft and you float, life is awesome.

    23:12-23:15

But there's a current and you go in a circle and you just keep kind of going that way.

    23:16-23:20

But the thing about it is you can get off that raft and you can swim against that.

    23:21-23:23

    I mean, I can't, I'm a terrible swimmer, but most people can.

    23:24-23:26

Sometimes you can even just walk along it.

    23:26-23:28

It's not that hard of a current.

    23:28-23:29

So that's kind of the current I want you to picture.

    23:30-23:36

And that's what we do as Christians, is we are constantly, if we're following Christ, we are swimming against the current.

    23:37-23:42

We can do it, and there are times you're gonna get tired, and you're gonna go, "Am I going anywhere?

    23:43-23:49

"'Cause all I'm doing is swimming against this current, "and I'm so tired." Because God does not promise ease in our Christian walk.

    23:50-23:56

He promises temptation, he promises struggle, but he promises he will always be there for us.

    23:57-24:03

So you're swimming, you're constantly swimming, you're tired, and you might say to yourself, okay, I gotta let up, I gotta take a break.

    24:03-24:05

I'm out of breath, I gotta catch my breath.

    24:06-24:10

The second you stop swimming, you do not stay still.

    24:10-24:13

There is no such thing as a stationary Christian.

    24:14-24:21

The second you stop swimming, you go backwards, right back to the old person that you were, right back to the person you were before you were saved.

    24:22-24:23

    And Satan knows that.

    24:24-24:28

And the second he sees you stop swimming, he is gonna pounce.

    24:28-24:30

And he is going to help you go backwards.

    24:30-24:32

And he is gonna push you.

    24:32-24:35

And he is going to get that stronghold back in your life.

    24:36-24:38

So you have to keep swimming.

    24:39-24:40

    You have to keep swimming.

    24:40-24:49

You have to continually chase after God 'cause if you don't, Satan is there to pounce and he will take you backwards.

    24:50-24:52

You have to make every effort.

    24:54-24:58

'Cause if you do, you will avoid that habitual sin.

    24:59-25:02

And I could go on and on and on about sin.

    25:03-25:05

Sin, I think Jeff and I were talking, that's what, like a year long sermon?

    25:06-25:07

If you actually just talk about sin.

    25:08-25:10

But I wanna leave you with this.

    25:11-25:24

I don't wanna avoid this because you may be here today and you're struggling with a sin and there is a stronghold in your life, and there's something that Satan's got you, or your own flesh has you locked in the sin.

    25:24-25:40

And you might say, "Ryan, I've tried and I've tried "and I've tried to defeat sin, and I'm not successful at it." Maybe you've just given up and you've accepted that sin, and you've almost started defining yourself as that sin.

    25:41-25:47

I'm here to tell you, and this is hard for me to say, but I love you and I have to say this.

    25:48-25:55

If you're here today and that's you, you are completely ignoring what Jesus did for us on the cross.

    25:56-25:57

    He paid our sin.

    25:58-26:02

That sin was wiped away when he died on that cross.

    26:02-26:08

And if you live in that sin and you profess to be a Christian, you are denying what he did on the cross.

    26:09-26:19

And when you deny what he did on the cross, you as well also say to God, hey, the power that you had that raised your son from the dead, that's not strong enough to beat my sin.

    26:19-26:23

That's not strong enough to defeat the devil.

    26:25-26:38

Just like we talked about back in verse three and four, we have access to a divine power through God because of the death of the cross, and he can defeat anything in our lives.

    26:39-26:44

There is nothing that God cannot defeat, And all we have to do is say, "God, take it.

    26:45-26:53

I can't do it because I've been trying to do it on my own, and I don't have the power to do it." And you never, ever will defeat sin on your own.

    26:54-26:55

    Only God can.

    26:56-26:58

You must immerse yourself in Christ.

    26:59-27:04

You must make every effort to go after God, and He will take that sin from you.

    27:04-27:09

He doesn't promise you won't be tempted by that sin again, 'cause you will be tempted, just as God was tempted in the wilderness.

    27:11-27:24

but God knew the Bible and he was able to stare sin in the face and go, "No, that is not what my father's word says." You have to make every effort to pursue God.

    27:27-27:33

Point number three, making every effort produces confidence in our salvation.

    27:35-27:36

    Let's look at verse 10.

    27:37-28:15

Therefore brothers, be all the more diligent to make calling an election sure. For if you practice these qualities, you will never fall. You will never fall. I've struggled with doubt in my life. I've struggled with doubt in my salvation. And I want you to kind of picture this. I talked about my dad and myself earlier in my intro, and I've never doubted my father's love for me. Why? Because he was always there hunting, he took me to baseball games, he put in the effort and there was never a doubt that I knew my dad loved me.

    28:17-28:18

And the same went back and forth.

    28:18-28:20

There's no doubt that I love my dad.

    28:21-28:23

And my dad never doubts that I love him.

    28:23-28:25

Because we put effort, we had a relationship.

    28:26-28:27

But I want you to picture this.

    28:28-28:43

Let's picture my dad constantly is texting me, constantly is calling me, constantly is showing up at my house and when he texts me, when he calls me, either I don't answer the text or I send him the voicemail or when he shows up at my house I'm real quick to kind of, "Dad, just get out of here.

    28:44-28:45

I don't want to do anything with you.

    28:45-28:51

Just go." And I'm nice to him, but I don't really do anything with him.

    28:52-29:00

And then one day I'm sitting there at home with Sarah and I say, "You know, I don't know if my dad loves me." She goes, "Well, no kidding you don't know because you don't spend any time with him.

    29:01-29:02

    He's here all the time.

    29:02-29:09

He's constantly trying to reach out to you, but you never reciprocate." Man, that sounds familiar.

    29:10-29:12

We do that to God all the time.

    29:13-29:14

God is constantly reaching out to us.

    29:15-29:16

    God is constantly calling us.

    29:16-29:18

God is constantly begging us to spend time with Him.

    29:20-29:27

And we're real quick to kind of dismiss it or we're real quick to kind of come up with an excuse why we can't read our Bible, why we can't pray, why we can't develop our relationship with God.

    29:29-29:30

We're real quick to dismiss it.

    29:30-29:34

And then we want to sit here and go, "I don't know if God loves me." Hey, just so you know, it's not God, it's you.

    29:36-29:38

You're the one that may not love God enough.

    29:38-29:39

    God loves you.

    29:40-29:43

He sent his son to die on the cross for you.

    29:44-29:46

He loved us before we were even a thought.

    29:47-29:51

He loved us in a way that we cannot imagine.

    29:52-29:56

And then we wanna sit here and go, I don't know if God loves me.

    29:56-29:58

It is not God, it is you.

    29:59-30:50

You have to make the effort and God will reveal himself and you will not doubt your salvation If you make every effort And I kind of love how Peter put these in my mind he put them in succession Because first you got to have spiritual maturity because once you're spiritually mature you're gonna avoid habitual sin Once you have those two in your life, you're not gonna doubt Your salvation because your spirits are mature You're living in God's Word. You're making every effort. So you're constantly spending time with God. Just like I said with my dad and I, we're constantly together. We work together. We do everything together. But I never doubt it because I see it. I live it. I know it. And that's what we have to do with God.

    30:51-30:56

We must make every effort in our Christian walk.

    30:59-31:02

Every effort, not a little effort, every effort.

    31:02-31:05

Every fiber of our being has to chase after God.

    31:08-31:15

And as I close, I want to use this analogy that I got off YouTube of all things.

    31:15-31:19

And it was one night I was sitting there laying in bed and I had the iPad.

    31:20-31:31

You ever get stuck in a YouTube wormhole where it's like you're just clicking and clicking and clicking and like two hours later you're like, "Whoa, how did I get here?" And sometimes that suggestion list is just awesome.

    31:32-31:34

You're just like, "Yup, yup, yup," and you're watching them all.

    31:35-31:38

If you know anything about me, I love comedians.

    31:38-31:39

    I love them.

    31:39-31:42

And my favorite comedian right now is this Christian comedian and his name is Michael Jr.

    31:43-31:46

I actually had the privilege to go see him for my birthday.

    31:46-31:47

My wife took me to see him.

    31:47-31:50

It's just, I encourage you, go home with your family.

    31:50-31:53

He's super friendly, super clean, awesome comedian.

    31:54-31:55

    You'll laugh forever.

    31:57-32:00

But I was in this wormhole, and I'm watching Michael Jr. videos like crazy.

    32:01-32:03

I'm starting to memorize his jokes.

    32:03-32:05

I've seen so many of them now.

    32:06-32:13

But I clicked on this one called The Good Room, and I thought it was gonna be funny, and it was not at all.

    32:14-32:16

Because what he did was he started preaching at his audience.

    32:18-32:25

And when I heard this analogy, it was so fitting to what I was talking about today and just kind of put everything into perspective for me.

    32:25-32:28

All right, so I don't want to take credit for it, so it's Michael Jr.'s, but I'm going to tell you about it.

    32:29-32:31

So I want everybody to picture themselves as a house.

    32:32-32:36

You can make it whatever you want it to look like, but it's a house.

    32:37-32:39

And outside that house is Jesus, and he's knocking.

    32:41-32:43

And it's just this knock, this steady knock.

    32:44-32:47

and he's not gonna force his way in, he's just gonna keep knocking.

    32:49-32:52

He's never gonna kick that door in, but he's never gonna stop knocking.

    32:54-33:00

And inside your house is just this filth, this sin everywhere, that filth represents sin.

    33:01-33:12

And you might say, "No, no, I don't want God to come in "until I get this cleaned up, until I get this in order, "this sin, whatever it may be, until I get that in order, "I don't want God to come in.

    33:12-33:16

I know he's there, but stay out there until I get this under control.

    33:16-33:30

And you might bring in other Christians, or you might bring in people that you know are Christians, and they might temporarily help you clean that up, and you might have this feel-good day, but that filth and that sin is gonna come back with a vengeance, 'cause it always comes back harder.

    33:31-33:33

And you might get it cleaned up and it's coming back.

    33:34-33:43

And the only person that can clean up that sin is at your door knocking, and he's got a mop and a bucket, and he's begging you to let him inside.

    33:45-33:52

And you might go through a hard time and you might go to the front door and you might open it, just a crack so you can pray and you feel better and you go back to your sin.

    33:54-34:05

And then finally, one day, you open that door and Jesus comes blasting through that door and he brings in this contractor named the Holy Spirit and your house is running at optimum.

    34:06-34:07

    And it's amazing.

    34:08-34:13

And your house is so full because you finally let Jesus into your life.

    34:13-34:23

You've accepted that free gift, and you let him into your life, and he has your house spotless, and he's running your life, and things are great.

    34:25-34:31

And then as time goes on, Christ is still in your life, but you put him into your good room.

    34:32-34:34

You guys know what I mean by good room?

    34:35-34:36

You know what I mean by good room, Mike?

    34:37-34:40

All right, so we had a good room in our house, And this was right in the front of the house.

    34:42-34:47

My parents took the carpet out of this room like 35 years later after it was put in.

    34:47-34:50

It didn't have footprints in it because we weren't allowed in the good room.

    34:51-34:53

It had sharp corners on the furniture.

    34:53-34:55

You could go in there once a year.

    34:55-34:56

    That was for Christmas.

    34:56-34:59

And I think my mom made us take the presents out of the room to open them.

    35:01-35:02

Nobody was allowed in that room.

    35:04-35:06

But you know, we've been to people's houses.

    35:06-35:07

Maybe they still have plastic on the furniture.

    35:08-35:41

like this really nice room, but it's always in the front of the house. So when somebody were to look into the windows, they see this good and they go, "Wow, look at that guy's house." And that's where we put God. We put him in the good room. So he's still in our lives, but we kind of are starting, we want to control things again. And what nobody sees is the rest of our house that has gone back to the filth and the sin because we're not allowing God access to our entire house or our entire lives.

    35:42-35:47

We come to church on Sunday and we put on a show and everybody goes, "Wow, look at that guy.

    35:48-35:50

He's got it going on." All you're seeing is this good room.

    35:52-35:54

So I ask you, is that you today?

    35:56-35:58

Is God in your good room?

    35:58-35:59

    Is God in your house?

    36:01-36:09

I beg you, if he's not in your house, go to the prayer team in the back after I'm done preaching, pray with them, they will lead you to Christ.

    36:09-36:10

    I promise you they will.

    36:12-36:15

If God's in your good room, let him out.

    36:16-36:19

Remember what it was like when he had complete access to your house.

    36:20-36:28

Let him out and start making the effort to allow God to control your life, to run your life.

    36:29-36:35

You start making the effort to have a relationship with God.

    36:36-36:39

Make every effort in your walk with Christ.

    36:41-36:46

If God's running your whole house, then praise the Lord today and don't ever let him in your good room.

    36:47-36:54

Make every effort to keep him out of your-- we must make the effort in our relationship with God.

    36:55-36:56

    Let's pray.

    36:58-36:59

Heavenly Father, I thank you for this day.

    37:01-37:09

I thank you for this opportunity, and I am humbled as a blue-collar construction worker to get up and think that I can share your word.

    37:11-37:14

And I thank you for allowing that.

    37:14-37:26

And God, I beg you right now, if there's somebody in this building today that does not know you, please do not let them leave this building until they get that taken care of.

    37:28-37:37

And God, if somebody has you in their good room, I beg you the same way, don't let them leave today without getting that taken care of.

    37:38-37:50

And please help each and every person in this room to remind them to make an effort to chase you, God, so we can experience complete sanctification through you.

    37:52-37:54

I ask you to bless this day, amen.
