What kind of a church is this? That's the question that we have been seeking to answer all through the month of September. What kind of a church is this?

    00:11-00:28

Quick review. What is the mission of Harvest Bible Chapel? If you know it, go ahead and shout it out. To make disciples, right. That's the short version. To make disciples. Everything we do at this church is to make disciples. And like Like where did we come up with that?

    00:29-00:31

    Well, from Jesus, right?

    00:32-00:38

The Bible says that Jesus gave us the Great Commission to go and to make disciples.

    00:39-00:44

So our mission is to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission in the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    00:45-00:46

    We want to make disciples.

    00:46-00:48

That's the mission of this church.

    00:50-00:52

And Harvest Bible Chapel is built on four pillars.

    00:52-01:05

The first pillar, remember way back September 8th we talked about the first pillar, is is, shout it out, don't be shy, yes, proclaiming the authority of God's word without apology.

    01:06-02:52

We believe that God wrote a book, so when we get up to, whether it's the worship songs that we sing, all of that content comes from the truth of God's word. When we get up to speak, all of the content of the sermons comes from the word of God. So we want to proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology. Our second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus through worship. Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4 that the Father was seeking worshipers. God was seeking people who would worship him in spirit and in truth. In truth, according to God's Word, but in spirit with everything that's in us. Worship is to be a mental and an emotional endeavor. Truth and spirit. And then the third pillar we talked about last week was what? Believing firmly in the power of prayer. Anybody praying big things this week, praise the Lord. He can handle it, right? He loves you. He loves you and he wants to hear from you and he has the power to meet anything that you need. So we believe firmly in the power of prayer. And today we're going to talk about, as we close this series and we get ready for our anniversary ministry off next week. We can't do it without talking about the fourth pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    02:53-03:21

And does anybody know it? I don't have my sign up here today, but does anybody know it? This is like bonus on the test. Yes, sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness. That Sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    03:24-03:27

To kind of set the table here, I want you to imagine a scenario with me.

    03:27-03:28

    Can you do that?

    03:29-03:31

I want you to imagine a scenario with me.

    03:32-03:38

I want you to imagine that you're walking somewhere in town with a friend of yours.

    03:42-03:45

And we'll just call that friend Joe.

    03:45-03:46

We'll just call him Joe, okay?

    03:47-03:48

    All in favor of Joe?

    03:48-03:49

    All right, that works.

    03:50-03:55

So you're walking, you and, let's say you and Joe were just hanging out for a little bit.

    03:56-04:01

If you're a woman and you're married and your husband's not named Joe, pick another name.

    04:03-04:03

    All right?

    04:06-04:23

But you've been with your friend Joe and you guys were just hanging out and you're walking through the street when all of the sudden coming over the hill is a bus that has lost control.

    04:25-04:29

Well, you don't see it, actually, but Joe sees it.

    04:30-04:30

    Everybody with me?

    04:32-04:40

You don't see what's happening, but Joe sees this bus is coming and it's heading right for you and you are completely oblivious to what's coming.

    04:43-04:50

And Joe jumps in front of you, shoves you out of the way, and gets hit by the bus head on.

    04:52-04:54

Are you with me in this scenario?

    04:55-06:14

And Joe's laying there in the street and the bus crashes to a halt and you get on your cell phone and you call the ambulance and here come the paramedics and you race to the hospital and they rush Joe back and they have him all hooked up to you know every IV and everything they can do to get some response from Joe and you're sitting in the waiting room. Are you with me? You're sitting in the waiting room and the doctor comes out and says, "He didn't make it. I'm so sorry." And you stand up from your seat in the waiting room and you say, "Well, that sure was nice what he did for me, I wonder what's for lunch." Right? Is that how the story goes? Would you do that? You know what's sad though? That happens every Sunday, doesn't it?

    06:16-06:59

People can come, and we can sing, and we can talk about, "God became a man." And it wasn't just a matter of getting hit by a bus. He was nailed to a cross bearing the wrath of God on himself, hung in public shame and humiliation and the spiritual and physical pain that the God/Man Jesus Christ endured for my sin and for your sin, and we can come and we can remember that, and we can sort of walk away unaffected by that.

    07:01-07:04

We can sort of walk away from church saying, "Well, that was really nice of Jesus.

    07:04-07:12

I wonder what's for lunch." Well, getting back to our scenario with our friend Joe, what would you really do?

    07:13-07:16

I'll tell you what you'd do if that really happened.

    07:17-07:18

Joe pushes you out, he gets hit by the bus.

    07:19-07:26

You know for the rest of your life that the only reason you're still walking on the earth is this man gave his life for you.

    07:26-07:32

You would tell everyone that sat still for more than seven seconds what this guy did for you, wouldn't you?

    07:33-07:45

You would start websites for Joe, and you'd start a Facebook fan page for Joe, and you would have fundraisers for Joe, and you would take every opportunity to honor his memory.

    07:50-07:52

Let me tell you something else.

    07:52-07:54

This is actually what you wouldn't do.

    07:54-07:58

You wouldn't tolerate any negative speech about Joe, would you?

    07:58-07:59

    Put yourself in that scenario.

    07:59-08:05

Imagine you're with some other friends, and they're like, "Yeah, Bob, you remember Joe?

    08:05-08:06

"Boy, was he a self-centered jerk.

    08:06-08:21

"What would you say?" You'd be like, "You don't know what you're talking about, man, that guy gave his life for me. Shut your pie hole, okay? You don't know what you're talking about. I'm not going to sit here and listen to you talk about him like that. You wouldn't tolerate it, would you? You wouldn't tolerate it.

    08:26-08:35

My question, church, is this, how can we do or say any less for Jesus Christ?

    08:40-08:44

How can we not talk about Him?

    08:47-08:51

How can we tolerate when people speak ill of Jesus?

    08:55-09:11

That's why today we're going to be talking about why this is a pillar in our church, and this is as important to us as everything else we do because this is our mission, sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    09:13-09:19

Well to keep it consistent in the series, once again, let's talk about some fails, right?

    09:22-09:27

As I've been telling you, Justin Cady keeps me up to date on what the hip kids are saying.

    09:29-09:38

And one of the things the hip kids say now, when somebody attempts something that doesn't work out with the desired response, they say, "Fail." Well these are some witness fails.

    09:44-09:46

I'm going to count backwards from four here.

    09:48-09:52

These are just some things that I hear people say like, why they're hesitant to witness.

    09:54-09:55

    Why they're hesitant to witness.

    09:57-10:00

Number four, what if they ask a question I don't know the answer to?

    10:01-10:02

I've heard that one a lot.

    10:02-10:06

Well, I'd like to witness to people, but what if they ask a question that I don't know the answer to?

    10:17-10:20

My answer to that is just simply this.

    10:21-10:27

If somebody asks you a question you don't know the answer to, you say, that is a really good question, can I get back to you on that?

    10:28-10:29

    Problem solved, right?

    10:31-10:35

My friend Mark is here, we spent some time in prison together, didn't we Mark?

    10:36-10:37

    Prison ministry together.

    10:37-10:39

I see some eyebrows going up.

    10:40-10:41

    Prison ministry.

    10:41-10:42

That happened to me a lot in the prison.

    10:43-10:47

We'd have guys come in and they'd ask a question and I'd be like, oh gosh man, That's a really good question.

    10:47-10:52

Let me write that down and come back to Bible study next week and we'll talk about it.

    10:52-10:55

And yeah, not a big deal.

    10:57-10:58

There's only one person that has all the answers.

    11:00-11:03

What if they ask a question I don't know the answer to?

    11:03-11:03

    That's okay.

    11:05-11:06

Just tell me to get back to them on that.

    11:07-11:08

    Number three, here's a fail.

    11:08-11:11

Well, I don't witness because I really don't know enough to share.

    11:12-11:14

I really don't know enough to share.

    11:14-11:17

I don't even know what I'd say because I really don't know enough to share.

    11:18-11:24

Well, I have a bigger concern because if you don't know enough to share, then I have to wonder if you know enough to be saved in the first place, really.

    11:25-11:29

And I'm not saying that in a condemning way or a judgmental way, I'm just saying that, let's be brutally honest.

    11:30-11:35

If you don't know enough about Jesus to talk about Jesus, then I have to ask you, do you know Jesus?

    11:35-11:39

Do you know enough about Jesus that you've come into a saving relationship with Him?

    11:42-11:43

    Share what you know, right?

    11:44-11:46

share what you know. We'll talk about that more in a few minutes.

    11:47-11:53

    Number two, here's a big fail. That's the preacher's job. That's the preacher's job.

    11:56-14:08

You know, I work on cars, or I work at a restaurant, or I am a physician's assistant, or it's the preacher's job to do the preachery things. Well, that's a fail, because the truth is you're going to encounter people that I will never meet. You will. You will encounter people just in your day-to-day, through your family, through your friends, through your workplace, through the places that you frequent. You're going to encounter people that I will never meet. The truth is, if you're a follower of of Jesus Christ, you're His witness. So it's not just a preacher's job. And you know the number one hesitancy, right? Number one is just simply this, "What if people reject me? What if people reject me?" That seems to be number one because nobody likes rejection. Nobody wants to be the kid that doesn't get picked for a kickball team like that was always me, and nobody wants to be rejected. But to that I would simply say this, look in your Bible at people like Stephen and James and Paul and Jesus. All people who were beaten, ridiculed, and killed for doing nothing more than speaking the truth. So what makes you think that everyone is going to love you for it? The most harmless person who ever lived was Jesus Christ, and simply for speaking God's truth, he was crucified. We know that was part of God's plan to purchase our redemption, but when you look at that from an earthly perspective and take these other ones into consideration, you You can certainly come to this conclusion, many times speaking God's truth is not popular, and many times people will hate those who speak for God for no other reason than the fact that they speak for God.

    14:10-14:11

All right, so let's get those off the table.

    14:12-14:16

Let's see what the Bible says about our witness, and I want you to turn to 2 Corinthians chapter 2.

    14:17-14:19

Turn to 2 Corinthians chapter 2.

    14:19-14:22

We're just going to look at a few verses here.

    14:26-14:28

    Second Corinthians chapter 2.

    14:30-14:32

We're going to be looking at verses 14 through 17.

    14:41-14:44

Number one on your outline, and I encourage you to take notes, number one is this.

    14:45-14:47

This is one of the most profound things.

    14:49-14:56

This is one of the deepest theological things that honestly I don't understand.

    14:58-15:02

I believe it, and I embrace it, but I don't fully understand it.

    15:02-15:03

    But write this down.

    15:03-15:07

Number one, God speaks the good news of the gospel through people.

    15:13-15:16

God speaks the good news of the gospel through people.

    15:18-15:43

Look at verse 14, it says, "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere." Let's stop there.

    15:44-16:15

in your Bible the words "through us." "Through us." God chooses -- look at the verse -- He chooses to spread the fragrance of the knowledge of Jesus. He chooses to make His Son known through us. And here's why that blows my mind, it's just simply He doesn't have to do that, right?

    16:18-16:22

Could God choose any other way to spread the gospel?

    16:24-16:24

    Think about it.

    16:25-16:30

God could write the gospel of Jesus Christ on the sky, couldn't He?

    16:34-16:38

God could write the gospel of Jesus Christ on every blade of grass.

    16:41-16:51

God could drop a sheet from heaven that hangs in everybody's view no matter where they are that has the gospel of Jesus Christ on, but for some reason He doesn't do that.

    16:55-17:04

What He chooses to do instead is to make His gospel known through you.

    17:08-17:10

And that just utterly confounds me.

    17:12-17:22

The eternal gospel, the message of life and death, the message of heaven and hell, the message that affects everyone's eternity.

    17:25-17:30

And God has entrusted that message to you.

    17:37-17:44

2 Corinthians 5.20 says we are ambassadors for Christ.

    17:45-17:48

This is a verse that the Lord has tattooed on my brain.

    17:50-18:00

Everywhere I go, everywhere I am, the people that I encounter, the conversations I have, I am representing Jesus Christ to people.

    18:06-18:35

I had a man come up to me many, many years ago, and not a believer, but I had shared some things with him, and he came up to me, he goes, "Man, you are, you are Jesus to me." And I'm like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa." I was like, "Dude, like, don't even make that comparison." And I shared a little more with him, but after that exchange, I walked away from that going, Biblically, I am Jesus to him.

    18:36-18:37

    I'm not Jesus, okay?

    18:37-18:41

Don't make a beeline for the door, Pastor Jeff's gone off the deep end.

    18:42-18:44

But understand what the Bible says.

    18:44-18:49

You represent Jesus to somebody because you're his ambassador.

    18:50-18:52

People are looking to you, "What's Jesus like?

    18:52-18:53

    What's the gospel like?

    18:54-19:03

How does Jesus Christ change a person?" We're looking to you for the example of that, because you're His ambassador.

    19:04-19:05

    You represent Jesus.

    19:06-19:07

    And you know what?

    19:09-19:11

We can have theological discussions all you want.

    19:11-19:13

You can marvel at the Trinity.

    19:13-19:16

How is God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit at the same time?

    19:17-19:18

    You can marvel at that.

    19:18-19:23

You can marvel at the fact that God created everything just by speaking it into existence.

    19:24-19:27

You can marvel at the sovereignty of God.

    19:27-19:36

You can marvel that He has every single little minute detail in the universe under His absolute complete control.

    19:36-19:39

You can marvel at those things, but do you know what I marvel at?

    19:39-19:41

I marvel that God loves me.

    19:43-19:46

And I marvel that God wants me to speak for Him.

    19:49-19:52

So the question is, what kind of witnesses are we?

    19:56-19:59

    Well, there's five descriptive words.

    20:00-20:01

What kind of witnesses are we, first of all?

    20:02-20:03

Letter A, we are victorious witnesses.

    20:05-20:06

    We are victorious witnesses.

    20:09-20:42

It says, "But thanks be to God who in Christ always leads us in the triumphal procession and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere, for we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life." Let's pause there.

    20:43-20:46

    We are victorious witnesses.

    20:48-20:50

I'm sure it caught your eye.

    20:50-20:53

What's this procession that he's talking about in verse 14?

    20:53-20:57

Well, Paul was actually using an illustration from his own day.

    21:00-21:05

When a Roman general would win a battle, they would have a parade.

    21:07-21:29

And at this parade, they would burn incense, and flowers would be thrown on the streets that as the horses walked through the streets and stomped on the flowers, between that and the incense that was burnt, it would give up this fragrance, that the whole town would smell like victory.

    21:33-21:41

And Paul was using that as an illustration to say, "Christ," did you notice what he said?

    21:41-21:44

He is always leading us in the victory parade.

    21:45-21:46

    Don't misunderstand.

    21:46-21:48

Read the Bible for what it says, okay?

    21:48-21:50

Read the Bible for what it says.

    21:50-21:53

Jesus is always leading this victory parade.

    21:54-21:59

That's why in my Bible I have the word "always circled." True or false question?

    22:01-22:01

    You ready?

    22:01-22:02

    True or false?

    22:06-22:14

Fear is when somebody rejects the gospel of Jesus Christ, and victory is when somebody receives the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    22:15-22:16

    True or false?

    22:17-22:22

Actually that statement is false, because here's what this verse is saying.

    22:22-22:27

When you speak for Jesus, God is glorified despite the response.

    22:27-22:28

    Did you see that?

    22:28-22:28

    Look again.

    22:29-22:32

God is glorified despite the response.

    22:33-22:43

God is glorified in the fragrance of Christ being out there, despite the fact that some people love the smell and some people don't.

    22:43-22:43

    Look again.

    22:44-22:47

He says Jesus always leads us in triumphal procession.

    22:48-22:50

Through us he's spreading the fragrance.

    22:53-22:59

Then he says, verse 15, "We're the aroma of Christ to God." That could be like a whole other sermon.

    22:59-23:00

    To God.

    23:01-23:18

smell like Christ to God. Isn't that awesome? Everybody say, "That's another sermon, Pastor Jeff." Come on, help me out. Everybody say, "Move on." Okay, I will.

    23:19-23:34

All right. He says, "Among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death and to the other a fragrance from life to life. This is profound.

    23:41-24:26

But when you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, the Bible says you smell like Jesus. You smell like Jesus. To some people, you smell like life. Oh, I just love being around them. I just love being around them. They are such an encouragement to me, and I just love that. That's true Christian fellowship, you smell like life. But to some people you stink like death. It's the same smell. It's the same smell.

    24:33-24:38

But you have to notice from this verse that results don't determine victory.

    24:38-24:42

victory, Jesus is already victorious, and we're already in the parade.

    24:44-24:45

    Do you see that?

    24:45-24:46

    Results don't determine.

    24:48-24:53

If you smell like death to some, then that's a fail, but if you smell like life to some, that's victory.

    24:53-24:54

That is not what that says.

    24:55-25:00

It says the victory is the fact that the gospel of Jesus Christ is getting out there.

    25:01-25:19

The victory is the fact that you smell like Jesus, and that's why you're always in this parade, and this is encouraging to me because I know when I witness to someone, I don't have to walk away from that going, "Was that a success or a fail?" It's always a success because I was making Christ known, right?

    25:19-25:20

    It's always a success.

    25:21-25:24

"But Pastor Jeff, what if they don't like you?" That's success.

    25:25-25:28

"But Pastor Jeff, what if they punch you in the nose?" That's success.

    25:29-25:35

"Pastor Jeff, what if they kill you?" That's success because the success is in the fact that Christ has been made known.

    25:37-25:39

I'm just privileged to be a part of the parade.

    25:41-25:45

Jesus Victory Parade, what an honor.

    25:47-25:48

    So we are victorious witnesses.

    25:50-25:53

Listen, faithfulness isn't determined by results, right?

    25:53-25:54

    Ask Noah.

    25:56-26:00

Noah preached for 120 years, and at the end of the day only eight people got on the ark.

    26:02-26:03

    Was Noah a failure?

    26:07-26:10

You see the successes in making Christ known.

    26:13-26:17

So number two in letter B actually, letter B, we are dependent witnesses.

    26:18-26:19

    Look at verse 16 again.

    26:20-26:21

    We are dependent witnesses.

    26:22-26:27

Paul says, "Who is sufficient for these things?" Who is sufficient for these things?

    26:31-26:35

This is a question that I ask myself weekly.

    26:39-26:43

Actually every Sunday afternoon, every Monday.

    26:49-26:52

If you can find enough honest preachers, you'll find a consensus.

    26:53-27:00

That Sunday afternoons and Mondays can be rough because you always feel like you didn't adequately express the grandeur of God's word like it deserved.

    27:03-27:05

Preachers wrestle with that, okay, a little insight.

    27:05-27:08

You wrestle with things in your job, let me tell you some things we wrestle with.

    27:09-27:18

Every week I get up and say this is what God said, and every week I walk away going, I didn't adequately express how awesome God is this week.

    27:18-27:25

I didn't adequately express how amazing his love and his grace truly is.

    27:26-27:41

I didn't adequately express what life in Christ is, what a blessing that is, and that's why Paul says, you know, when we're talking about making Christ known, who is sufficient for these things?

    27:43-27:54

And when I talk to people, now that's preacher talk, but let me tell you, when I talk to my brothers and sisters in Christ, this is what I always hear when it comes to witnessing.

    27:55-28:04

know I've been sharing things with my grandma or I've been sharing things with my cousin or I've been sharing things and I have to wonder, did I say the right thing?

    28:04-28:06

Anybody ever wrestle with that? Did I say the right thing?

    28:08-28:15

I've had this conversation, I've had this conversation with some people in this room and many times over the years this conversation, did I say the right thing?

    28:16-28:19

Pastor Jeff, I'm afraid maybe I didn;t share enough. Anybody ever feel like that?

    28:19-28:20

    I didn't share enough!

    28:24-28:52

people say, "Well, maybe Pastor Jeff, maybe I shared too much. Maybe I just dumped too much Bible on them, and instead of just explaining the cross and the empty tomb, I just gave them a systematic theology lesson, and I just feel like maybe I gave them too much." And And we all just kind of walk away going, "Who is sufficient for these things?" It's heavy.

    28:55-28:56

    Well, here's the bad news.

    28:58-29:01

There's not a person in this room that's sufficient in and of yourself.

    29:02-29:02

    You're not.

    29:02-29:03

    You're not sufficient.

    29:04-29:05

    Justin, you're not sufficient.

    29:05-29:07

I like you, man, but you're not sufficient.

    29:08-29:09

    You're not.

    29:09-29:10

    I'm not.

    29:12-29:13

But that's not really bad news.

    29:13-29:23

actually good news because if you look down a few verses in chapter 3 and verse 5, look what Paul says, "Not that we are sufficient in ourselves." Not that we are sufficient in ourselves.

    29:27-29:30

To claim anything as coming from us.

    29:30-29:32

    Oh, so I'm not alone.

    29:33-29:35

Paul was like totally dealing with this too.

    29:35-29:38

Paul's like, "I'm not sufficient." But look at this next phrase.

    29:39-29:40

This should be underlined in your Bible too.

    29:41-29:42

He says our sufficiency is from God.

    29:44-29:46

    Our sufficiency is from God.

    29:50-29:53

So I would like to tell you, church, simply this, you're dependent witnesses.

    29:53-29:54

    You're dependent.

    29:54-29:55

    You're dependent on God.

    29:56-30:00

Don't think that you're going out there to change the world for God without Him, okay?

    30:01-30:02

    You're not sufficient.

    30:05-30:05

    You're dependent.

    30:07-30:08

You're dependent on Him for all things.

    30:10-31:04

or see, jot this down, we are sincere witnesses. We are sincere witnesses. He says, "For we are not like so many, peddlers of God's Word." Peddlers. When you hear peddler, what do you think of? What's that? I know, I just didn't want to repeat it. Does anybody here sell cars? That's kind of a stereotype, isn't it? I know we got our lawyer jokes and we got our used car salesman jokes and we got our preacher jokes and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But yeah, that's what a lot of people think of. You What's it going to take for me to get you in one of these?

    31:05-31:06

    This is your car.

    31:07-31:08

    Oh, this is your car.

    31:08-31:10

You were made for this car.

    31:10-31:11

    Look at it.

    31:11-31:13

That seat just contours right around you.

    31:14-31:15

You were made for this car.

    31:16-31:19

Peddlers, what else do you think of?

    31:20-31:20

You know what I think of.

    31:21-31:24

You know one of my weaknesses, one of my guilty pleasures, infomercials.

    31:25-31:27

When I think of peddlers, I think of the ShamWow guy.

    31:28-31:29

Do you know who I'm talking about?

    31:29-31:31

How many people have seen the ShamWow guy?

    31:32-31:35

Like, dude, you are way too excited about a towel, okay?

    31:38-31:47

But I mean, that guy is just like, you know, he's like, we got our orange towel here, and we dumped five gallons of soda, and it sucked it right up.

    31:47-31:51

I'm like, okay, that's kind of impressive, but you're smoking something, pal.

    31:53-31:53

    Peddlers.

    31:55-31:56

Well, that's why they do it.

    31:56-31:58

It's going so over the top.

    32:02-32:05

And sadly, there's a lot of peddlers on Christian television, right?

    32:06-32:12

There's a lot of peddlers on Christian television using the Word of God to make a buck.

    32:13-33:00

Using the Word of God for their own advantage and they just look so slick and they sound so loud and they make a buck. Enough of them. Look at the next phrase. He said, "We're not the peddlers." He goes, "But as men of sincerity." Sincerity. And you guys know we're coming up on two years. That's something we've been saying from the very beginning. Some of you have been with us from the very beginning, right, can, and that's something we have talked about from the very beginning. We want to be an authentic church. We want to be sincere. We don't want to play church.

    33:00-33:59

We're not here to put on a show. I'm not here to entertain you. We want to be sincere. We want to be authentic. God help us. I'm sure some of you, when you heard that the sermon was about witnessing today, you just kind of leaned over to somebody and you said, "Well, pack your bags. We're going on a guilt trip," and that's not the case at all. I am not going to guilt trip anyone here today because I don't think that's right. I think that there really can only be one motive for witnessing, one sincere motive, and that's just simply love. That's the motive. I could really guilt you into witnessing. I could give you a little talk that would make you go out and you'd be stuffing gospel tracts down people's throats. If you're not motivated by love though, what does it mean, right?

    34:01-34:12

If you're not motivated by "I do this because I love Jesus," if you're not motivated by "I do this because I love lost people," then it just doesn't matter.

    34:15-34:42

I read this week about a guy who when he was in Bible college he took this like evangelism class, and in order to get an A in the class he had to share the gospel with seven people a week during the tenure of this class. I remember being in school. What do you think that looked like? I don't know this guy, maybe Maybe he's different than me, but I can tell you how it would have been for me.

    34:43-34:54

Like, "Oh, my project's due tomorrow." I would have been racing to Walmart at like 11.45 and like running through the parking lot like, "Oh, by the way, here's a gospel track.

    34:54-34:58

Can I tell you about Jesus?" "No." "Okay, one." "Hey, here's a gospel track.

    34:58-35:03

Can I tell you about Jesus?" "Get lost, kid." "Two." And it would just be like a matter of keeping the checklist.

    35:05-35:10

And that's not proper motivation for sharing the gospel.

    35:10-35:13

It has to be because you love Jesus.

    35:16-35:18

And it has to be because you love lost people.

    35:22-35:24

Speaking of, let me ask you that.

    35:24-35:26

    Do you love lost people?

    35:27-35:28

    Do you love lost people?

    35:28-35:29

Do you know people are hungry?

    35:30-35:43

People are starving in their soul, And they've been stuffing themselves with sex and entertainment and drugs and alcohol, and what they find is they're still starving in their soul.

    35:45-35:46

    Does that bother you?

    35:46-35:47

    Do you care?

    35:53-37:01

You know, that neighbor of yours that doesn't know Christ, do you know that they are one breath away from eternal separation from God in a place called hell, does that bother you? Does that bother you? When you truly understand what Jesus has accomplished for you, when you truly love people the way Jesus loves people, and when you come to a reality check about the truth about hell, you're going to be witnessing and sharing as someone of sincerity. Sincere. Sincere. Do it out of love. Next phrase, letter D, we are commissioned witnesses. He says, "As commissioned by God, commissioned witnesses." That sort of cranks it up a little bit. So not only do we do it out of love and a right motive, but we do it because God told us to do it, right? You know the Great Commission, Jesus makes the most incredible statement on authority ever spoken.

    37:02-37:07

When Jesus said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Have you ever thought about that?

    37:09-37:15

Jesus said, "All authority." Everything, all authority.

    37:16-37:17

    Who's in charge of everything?

    37:18-37:19

    Jesus said He is.

    37:20-37:22

Like what about like what's happening in heaven?

    37:22-37:28

You think of all the angels and everything that's happening in the realm that we can't even see yet.

    37:29-37:30

Who has the authority over that?

    37:32-37:32

    Jesus does.

    37:33-37:35

Who has authority over everything that's happening on the earth?

    37:36-37:37

    Jesus does.

    37:37-37:45

Jesus was saying, "I am the CEO of everything." Now go make disciples.

    37:47-37:49

And that's why Paul here says, "We're commissioned.

    37:51-39:13

commissioned. God's given us a job to do. The CEO of the universe has given us a job. Let's go after that. You say, "Well, I know what you're saying about witnessing, but witnessing isn't really my thing." Well, you better make it your thing, because Jesus said, "Go make disciples." We're commissioned by God, and but you do have to represent Jesus to whomever God puts in your path. We're commissioned. Paul says it here, we're commissioned by God. He's given us a job, let's get on it, in love. And then finally, we are empowered witnesses. We are empowered witnesses. He says, "In the sight of God, we speak in Christ." When Jesus gave the Great Commission, he didn't say, "Go make disciples, teach them, baptize them, and I will check in occasionally to see how you're doing." He He did say, "I will be with you until the end of the age." Remind you that you are God's ministry partner.

    39:16-39:18

And that sort of takes the pressure off, doesn't it?

    39:18-39:19

All you need to do is tell the story.

    39:20-39:21

God does the heavy lifting, right?

    39:22-39:49

The Holy Spirit is the one who does the spiritual work, the work of regeneration, the work of conviction, the work of that heart stuff that you and I can't do. Our job is to just tell people the story. But we're empowered witnesses because we're doing this with God. So God has chosen to proclaim the gospel through people.

    39:52-40:03

Secondly, I want to talk about one word here, and that's the word "boldness." Write this down. God's people are called to speak the good news of the gospel boldly.

    40:06-40:41

Boldly. The way that it's worded on the pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel is sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness. Why is that phrase "with boldness in there? Well, the early church had one motive, or one method rather. One simple and powerful method, and it was boldness. You ready for a word study? The Greek word for boldness is translated 42 times in the New Testament, and it literally means openness.

    40:43-40:44

    It means speaking freely.

    40:46-40:51

It means clear, plain, and directly.

    40:51-41:01

When we talk about sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness, that doesn't mean you race home from church and go to your neighbor's house and start pounding on their door, "Hey, pagan, you're going to hell!

    41:03-41:04

    "Turn or burn!

    41:04-41:09

"Get right or get left!" All that stuff may be true, but that's obnoxious.

    41:10-41:12

    And that's not boldness.

    41:13-41:14

    So, what is boldness?

    41:15-41:18

Boldness just simply means clear, plain, and direct, open.

    41:19-41:30

A couple of examples, Mark chapter 8, verses 31 and 32, it says, "He, Jesus, began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed.

    41:31-41:36

And after three days rise again, and He said this plainly." That's the word for bold.

    41:37-41:38

It says Jesus said it plainly.

    41:38-41:45

Jesus didn't gather his disciples around and try to give them some sort of a cryptogram, some sort of a holy crossword.

    41:45-41:46

See if you can figure this out.

    41:47-41:48

    He spoke very plainly.

    41:48-41:55

"Listen, I'm going to die and I'm going to raise from the dead." Plain.

    41:58-42:01

Another example is Acts chapter 7, verses 25 through 26.

    42:01-43:15

"Some of the people of Jerusalem therefore said, 'Is this not the man whom they seek to kill, and here He is speaking openly. Openly, there it is again. That's boldness, just speaking openly. And then you see it in the church, Acts chapter 4, verses 13, 29, and 31, over and over and over and over. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, verse 29, "Grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness." Verse 31, continue to speak the Word of God with boldness. Boldness is not disregarding the willingness of the hearer. Boldness is this. Boldness is the Spirit-directed conviction that one must share the news clearly and not fear the response of the listener. Simply opportunity, I will speak for him." That's boldness. When God gives me opportunity, I'm going to speak for him. That's bold.

    43:18-43:34

It's not obnoxious, it's not jerky, it's actually very humble, but it's clear. As I Before I close my time, I wanted to share with you the vision for outreach at Harvest Bible Chapels.

    43:34-43:39

We talk about witnessing and we talk about getting out, sharing the gospel.

    43:41-43:43

I want you to jot these things down.

    43:45-43:47

What does this church do for outreach?

    43:50-43:51

    Well, there are three things.

    43:51-43:59

Number one, I know the screen's going to say invite, and I thought about that.

    43:59-44:00

    That's like a subheading.

    44:00-44:01

    Write down personal.

    44:03-44:06

Write down personal under number one, and invite's going to come under that, okay?

    44:07-44:09

Write down the word personal, number one.

    44:10-44:11

    How does outreach happen?

    44:11-44:12

    What happens with you personally?

    44:16-44:18

    It happens with you personally.

    44:19-44:22

I'd like to remind you again to share what you know. Just share what you know.

    44:30-46:05

It's just seeing who God's preparing that you can share the message with. Now like I said, I'm no Billy Graham. I'm not even a Teddy Graham. I'm just like some guy. And at the risk of sounding too simplistic, I mean, here's what I do when I meet people and talk to them. It's just like this. We get to talking and, you know, "It's really nice to meet you," and stuff. I say, "Do you know the story about Jesus?" And judging in their response determines what I say next. Sometimes people are like, "Oh yeah, I know the story about Jesus, and when they say that, I make sure they know the story about Jesus. Like, you know, let's do a little role-playing, right? Bob, you're up first. Do you know the story about Jesus? Now, I'm sorry, I didn't give you your role. Shame on me. Your answer is yes, okay? Do you know the story about Jesus? You know how the Bible says that He came, He died for your sins, and that He rose from the dead so that you could have eternal life and your sins could be forgiven? You know that story? What have you done with that?" That's what I ask people. I just ask them, "What have you done with that?" I was witnessing to a guy a couple weeks ago, like I said, that very question, I said, "What have you done with that?" He said, "Nothing." And I said, "Not like jerky, I'm like sitting down with a guy, okay, so don't think I'm like, you know, beating him over the head.

    46:06-46:12

You know, we're just sitting down talking, all right? So You're gonna say yes and then you're gonna say nothing.

    46:12-46:12

    You got that?

    46:13-46:15

Okay, do you know the story about Jesus?

    46:15-46:18

How he died on the cross for you and he rose from the dead.

    46:18-46:19

Well, what have you done with that?

    46:21-46:23

Why haven't you done something with that?

    46:23-46:24

    Do you know?

    46:25-46:29

You know the Bible says that your eternity hinges on what you do with Jesus Christ.

    46:29-46:30

    Do you know that?

    46:31-46:32

    And this guy said yes.

    46:34-46:39

And I said, well then, I guess I just gotta ask you, what's the hangup?

    46:40-46:44

If you know, what are you doing about that?

    46:44-46:59

And we got to talking, and through the conversation, and you're a good sport, Bob, but through the conversation, this man said, "Following Jesus just sounds like too much of a commitment." And I said, "You know what?

    47:02-47:04

"Jesus isn't looking for any part-time help." That's true.

    47:05-47:11

So according to the Bible, when you follow Christ, it's your whole life, man.

    47:11-47:12

    It's everything.

    47:12-47:12

    So you're right.

    47:13-47:25

But I'd like you, and I just said to the man, I'd like you to really reconsider, and I'd like you to really think about the truth about what the Bible says about eternal life and how important that is.

    47:26-47:30

And then I said, "Can I have a prayer with you?" And I just had like a quick 30-second prayer with the guy.

    47:30-47:53

And in that prayer, I just said, "God, reveal yourself to this man." hard? Honestly, I don't think it is. And you're like, well, like what if somebody totally rejects you? Well, that's easy. So we need another volunteer, all right?

    47:54-48:49

How about, I'm gonna try to share with somebody, but I need you to be really mean, okay? I'm not gonna feed you your lines, this is all ad-lib. Can somebody be really mean? Derek, you mean our silky smooth velvet drummer here is gonna be mean? Alright, so you're gonna be mean, you're gonna reject. I'm gonna try to share with you, and we didn't plan this out, okay? We didn't talk about this at all, did we? I'm just gonna try to share with you, and I just want you to be as nasty as possible to me, okay? So like we're talking, maybe we're sitting across from each other at a restaurant or something and we get to talking and I say, "Hey man, do you know the story about Jesus?" Well, you know the story about Jesus, how he died on the cross for your sins?

    48:59-49:45

Well when was the last time you've been to church? 1965. That was 10 years before I was even an idea. Now see, I do that. I'm not just like playing with Derek here. I do that because I'm trying to keep the conversation from turning into a fight. So I say that and yeah, you're like, "Yeah Jeff, you're not Billy Graham and you're not Jerry Seinfeld either. I know, but I'm trying to keep the tone light here, right? I'm just trying to keep the tone light. I don't want to fight with you. And like, what would you think about coming and checking out my church sometime? Now be nasty, man. Come on. Why would you think about, what do you think about checking out my church sometime, man? I would love to have you come to Harvest Bible Chapel.

    49:53-50:17

Well, you know what? We don't, we're not going to encourage you to smoke at our church, anything of any type. However, however, I just want you to know that it's a standing invitation, all right? So you know what, our website's at the bottom of this card. Look us up online. I would love to have you come and I promise you we're not gonna throw you out, all right?

    50:21-51:23

You know what? There are some women at our church. However, we're not a dating club. I want you to come and I want you to meet someone that's more important than any woman or any man on this earth, all right? So I'm sorry. I'm sorry that you had a bad church experience, I really am, and there's nothing I can do about that, but I would just encourage you sometime, why don't you come and check us out? We'd love to have you, man. Okay, great. Now see, that wasn't even that nasty. Can he get nastier than that? No, see, that was about as much as he could ramp it up. But that's why when I say sharing personally, sometimes that's why I encourage you just go straight to the invite. If somebody's like not having it, don't want to talk about it. I just like to leave people with an open-ended invite, right? Like, and that's how I start a lot of conversations with people.

    51:24-52:46

You know, like, I'll say, "Hey, do you have a church home?" Now, your answer, okay, your answer is yes, and I'm gonna feed you your lines. You're gonna say yes, I go to Northway, okay? All right, so I meet this handsome young dude. I'm like, "Hey, do you have a church home? Oh you do? Where do you go? Oh you know what, I know some people. That's a fantastic church. I got a lot of friends over there. I'll tell you what, if that's where God has you and he's using you, that's fantastic. If you ever want to come and visit us sometime, our website's on the bottom of that. I would love for you to come and visit with us. Check out our website. It tells you what kind of church we are. That's all there is to it. That is all there is to it. Okay, one more. How about the "Do you have a church home?" and the person says no, I don't have a church home. Gosh, that one's even easier. Randy, you're up for this one. Like, okay, so we get talking, I meet this guy, and I think, you know, we get enough of a relationship going, we get into the conversation, I'm like, hey man, do you have a church home? I would love for you to come. You know what, we're part of a church plant we just launched, you know, a couple years ago. I would love to have you come and check us out. All the information is on our website right there in the bottom. You can get online. My number's on the website, give me a call. I would love to have you come and check us out. See? Now let me ask you, what was hard about that?

    52:50-53:40

Nothing. And I would just encourage you, you don't have to -- I think some people are so scared of witnessing because they think like they're gonna be under the lights and all of a sudden they're gonna have to answer all of these like Bible college questions. Share what you know about Jesus. Ask people what they've done Jesus and invite him to church. So write that down, invites, invites. You know some people just need an invitation, did you know that? Some people just need an invitation. Vision for outreach. Secondly is small groups. And small groups, our to have every small group involved in doing outreach.

    53:41-53:45

In the meantime, what we're doing, this fall we're going to be having two outreach events.

    53:45-53:47

One is with World Vision, when is that, Michelle?

    53:49-54:00

November 23rd, we're going to get a group to get onto World Vision to do some ministry down there, and we're talking with Amanda Frederick's friend about doing some, she has a outreach in Pittsburgh.

    54:00-54:11

But to get some things happening church-wide, you could call them, I guess, baby steps, just to get our church familiar with what's out there and getting involved in some of these trips.

    54:11-54:15

And the eventual goal, every small group adopts its own outreach.

    54:16-54:24

The small group that you attend once a month or once a quarter is out doing something to minister to people in this community.

    54:26-54:30

I'd like to see that happen by early 2014 with every small group.

    54:31-54:34

And then finally, Harvest Bible Fellowship.

    54:34-54:36

Right on HBF, Harvest Bible Fellowship.

    54:39-54:46

We're planning churches in Nicaragua, two in the next year, two in the following year, and there are already two or three down there now.

    54:48-54:51

And we're going to be getting involved with some other Harvest Bible Chapels.

    54:51-54:58

I know Denver and Niagara, some others are already involved that we're going to partner with them.

    54:58-55:05

And maybe we're not at a point where we can send 30 people and $30,000, maybe we're at a point where we can send three people and $3,000.

    55:06-56:18

I don't know. But we want to be sending, hopefully by next summer, send a few people down to do some mission work in Nicaragua. But that's the vision for outreach, personal, including inviting people and you sharing the gospel with people. Small groups, two events this fall, every small group doing outreach. And work down in Nicaragua. Also, I'd just encourage you to check out your bullet, and we're praying for leadership for these outreach ministries. We're praying for somebody to head up local outreach that can work with Justin and Michelle as they're over small groups, and can work with me to sort of spearhead local outreach efforts. You're like, "Well, what does that look like?" You're going to local needs. Like, you know, what does the church need to be doing in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh? What can we be doing to meet people's needs in this area? You'll connect and communicate with ministries in this area.

    56:19-56:23

How can we be a blessing? How can we share the gospel? How can we love people?

    56:27-57:01

And this position also is going to make our presence known, whether it's through community events, newspaper, web, whatever, just letting people know, "Here we are and here's what we're doing." And then international, we need a liaison with Harvest Bible Fellowship, we need somebody who's going to keep us updated on prayer and financial needs, who's going to work with the fellowship and work with me to plan short-term trips and partner with these other Harvest Bible chapels to be doing international missions. And here's what I'm I'm asking for, just simply from you, church.

    57:01-57:04

You know, we said last week about praying big things.

    57:04-57:06

I'm just asking that we pray about this right now.

    57:07-57:08

Like, we seek after the Lord.

    57:08-57:12

Hey, we need leadership for outreach, locally and internationally.

    57:12-57:13

    We need leadership for that.

    57:13-57:20

We need somebody that's going to, you know, grab that ministry and say, "I'm going after this." Let's pray for it, okay?

    57:22-58:02

You know, sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness can sound pretty intimidating, like to remind you of what Paul said in Ephesians 6 20 when he says, "Pray also for me that words may be given to me and opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel for which I am an ambassador in chains that I may declare it boldly as I ought to speak." So if the Apostle Paul had to pray for boldness and the early church had to pray for boldness. Where does boldness come from?

    58:04-58:40

Where does it come from? It comes from God, doesn't it? So church, I'm not saying leave here going, "I the tiger, come on, you can do it!" You can't. What I'm leaving here is saying, let's as a church, if we're praying for big things, one of the big things we need to pray for is boldness. Let's leave here saying, "We are going to pray that God would effectively use me and speak through me to share the love and to share the Word of Jesus Christ. God, give me boldness. It comes from Him. Paul said pray for it.

  • 00:00-00:00

    Amen.

    00:04-00:08

If you're visiting with us this month, this is a great month to be checking out Harvest Bible Chapel.

    00:09-00:11

And you're like, "Oh, as opposed to other months?" No, you know what I mean.

    00:13-00:15

We are talking about Harvest DNA.

    00:15-00:16

What kind of a church is this?

    00:19-00:22

And first of all, we talked about the mission of the church.

    00:22-00:25

The mission of our church is to glorify God.

    00:26-00:27

    That's God's mission.

    00:28-00:30

I think it's a good idea for us to be on that mission.

    00:30-00:38

We want to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission, through the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    00:38-00:41

Jesus' last command is our first priority.

    00:41-00:46

Jesus said, "Go make disciples," and that's what the mission of our church is.

    00:48-00:53

Two weeks ago we talked about proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    00:53-00:56

That's the first pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    00:56-00:57

What kind of church is this?

    00:57-01:00

We proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology.

    01:02-01:10

You're never going to hear me, or if you go to any other harvest anywhere in the world, you're never going to hear one of the harvest pastors stand up and say, "Well, this is what the Bible says.

    01:10-01:11

    I'm kind of sorry.

    01:11-01:15

It seems a little harsh, or it seems a little this, or…" God's not sorry.

    01:16-01:22

And we're not sorry when we proclaim what the Lord has said in His Word.

    01:23-01:25

That's why we are diligent to do nothing but preach the Bible.

    01:29-01:35

Our second pillar that we talked about last week was lifting high the name of Jesus through worship.

    01:36-01:43

Jesus told the Samaritan woman written down in John chapter 4 that the Father is seeking what?

    01:44-01:46

    He's seeking worshipers, right?

    01:46-01:51

God is looking down from heaven and He's looking for people who will worship Him.

    01:54-01:55

    Worship Him how?

    01:55-02:04

Well, Jesus said, "True worshippers worship in spirit and in truth." Today we're going to talk about the third pillar.

    02:04-02:05

What kind of church is this?

    02:05-02:13

Well, we would say, "Well, we want to be like the New Testament church, right?

    02:13-02:16

All in favor, let's be a New Testament church.

    02:16-02:17

Let's be like the church in the book of Acts.

    02:17-02:18

    All in favor?

    02:18-02:19

    Some of you?

    02:19-02:20

Okay, the rest of you are going to have to catch up.

    02:20-02:21

    That's what I want.

    02:21-02:23

I want to be like the church in the book of Acts.

    02:23-02:27

That's the kind of church I want Harvest Bible Chapel to be.

    02:29-02:36

But if you read about the church in the book of Acts, you'll see that the church is the place where supernatural things happen.

    02:38-02:39

    Read the book of Acts.

    02:40-03:21

early church, the early church didn't hold seminars. You don't read about Peter like assembling the people together saying, "All right church, here's how you win friends and influence people." You don't see that. You don't see Paul holding a social media networking seminar. Here's how you're going to get people to pack into your church. You just, you don't see that. You don't see this, Well, if you do A plus B, then you'll get C. The church is a place where supernatural things happen, a place where things happen that aren't humanly explainable.

    03:22-03:24

Now, I'm not talking about bizarre things.

    03:24-03:26

I'm not talking about unbiblical things.

    03:27-03:32

What I am talking about are things like this, dramatic conversions.

    03:34-03:39

The church is to be a place where dead people become alive people.

    03:40-03:41

That's what happens with the gospel of Jesus.

    03:41-03:42

    You know that, right?

    03:42-03:46

Jesus didn't come into the world to turn bad people into good people.

    03:46-03:49

He came into the world to turn dead people into alive people.

    03:49-03:54

We're dead in our sins, Ephesians 2, and we've been made alive in Jesus Christ.

    03:54-04:02

The church is to be a place where you see zombies, you know, walking dead people, come to life in Jesus Christ.

    04:04-04:08

The church is to be a place of physical and emotional healing.

    04:10-04:26

The church is to be a place where people can stand up and give testimony and say, "The doctor said there was no hope for me, but the Lord has healed me." Where people stand up and say, "I've been an emotional wreck for years, and I cried out to the Lord that He brought the emotional healing that I've needed.

    04:26-04:29

It came from Him." That should be happening in the church.

    04:33-04:44

The church should be a place where addictions are broken, whether it's addictions to drugs or alcohol or food or codependency or whatever.

    04:45-04:52

The church should be a place where you hear stories of "God has shattered my addiction.

    04:53-04:55

    God has changed my cravings.

    04:56-05:04

You know, I tried for years to get that off my back, and only the power of Jesus Christ within made that happen.

    05:08-05:29

The church should be a place where marriages are healed, where you should hear women stand up and say, "You know, I was done with him, and our marriage was in shambles, and there was no love, and as we both started seeking the Lord and seeking God's Word for our marriage, Jesus Christ healed our marriage, and how awesome He is.

    05:31-05:33

That should be happening in where?

    05:34-05:35

    The church, right?

    05:36-05:37

It should be happening in the church.

    05:38-05:52

In other words, the church should be a place where we experience direct, specific answers to prayer.

    05:54-05:56

That's the third pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    05:56-05:58

We proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology.

    05:58-06:00

We lift high the name of Jesus in worship.

    06:00-06:06

The third pillar is believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    06:08-06:13

We believe in prayer at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    06:14-06:23

If you were to talk to James MacDonald and ask him, "What would you attribute the growth of your church in this fellowship?" Do you know what he would say?

    06:24-06:25

I've had this conversation with him.

    06:25-06:26

Do you know what he would tell you?

    06:27-06:27

    Prayer.

    06:28-06:40

He said, "It is people on their faces crying out to God to glorify His name in this church." That is what is responsible for the growth of this church and this fellowship.

    06:42-06:43

It's believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    06:46-06:54

Now I'm a lot older than I look, so when I need to know what the young and hip people or saying I turned to Justin Cady.

    06:59-07:07

And when somebody attempts something but does not achieve the intended result, what the kids say nowadays is what?

    07:08-07:09

    Fail, right?

    07:09-07:10

    Have you heard this?

    07:11-07:14

All these kids and their rock and roll music and their fail.

    07:18-07:23

Well, these are some prayer fails, okay?

    07:24-07:24

    These are some prayer fails.

    07:25-07:34

I want you to write these down and you might laugh a little bit and you might get a little bit convicted because I had to wrestle through this stuff this week, so why shouldn't you, Bob?

    07:34-07:35

    All right?

    07:38-07:39

    Prayer fails.

    07:39-07:40

    Here's the first one.

    07:41-07:43

Let's just, you know what I'm going to say, so let's just get it off the table, right?

    07:44-07:45

    I'll pray for you.

    07:46-07:51

You run into somebody at church and you're like, "Hey, how's it going?" You're like, "Oh, you know what?

    07:52-07:53

We're just having a really hard time right now.

    07:53-07:56

Our kids are going through some health things and I'm sorry to hear that.

    07:57-07:59

    I'll pray for you." Liar.

    08:00-08:01

    No, you won't.

    08:01-08:02

    No, you won't.

    08:02-08:06

And I don't mean like you intended to lie, but you know what happens.

    08:06-08:15

By the time you go about your business and you get home and maybe you had to stop a couple places on the way home and then all of a sudden you've completely lost that.

    08:15-08:23

has fallen off of your mind that you know what happens the next time you see that person, you're like, "Oh no, there's Sean.

    08:23-08:24

I told him I'd pray for him.

    08:25-08:26

Oh dear God, I'm praying for Sean right now.

    08:26-08:28

Oh please bless him in every way possible.

    08:28-08:28

    Amen.

    08:28-08:36

Hey Sean, I've been praying for you." Instead of, "I'll pray for you," what do we say at harvest?

    08:37-08:38

    Let's pray right now, right?

    08:39-08:39

    Why not?

    08:40-08:40

    Why not?

    08:41-08:44

You're like, "Hey man, I'm having a hard time." All right, well let's just pray right now.

    08:45-08:46

    Boom, go into it.

    08:46-08:47

    Is God available?

    08:48-08:49

    Is God available?

    08:50-08:51

    Does He keep office hours?

    08:51-08:52

    No.

    08:53-08:54

    He's always available.

    08:54-09:01

So instead of "I'll pray for you," why can't you just say, "Let's pray right now." And let's just stop and pause.

    09:01-09:02

    Let's just pray right now.

    09:02-09:04

So I will pray for you.

    09:04-09:05

    That's a fail.

    09:08-09:11

Unless you actually write the person's name down and pray for them.

    09:11-09:14

And if you do that, I want to see your list, all right?

    09:16-09:17

    I'll show you my list.

    09:19-09:20

    I will pray for you.

    09:20-09:20

    That's a fail.

    09:21-09:28

Secondly, oh, I have a hard time saying this one.

    09:30-09:31

I'm going to try to get it out.

    09:32-09:42

When people say this, "I guess all we can do is pray." Do you know why that irritates me?

    09:42-09:42

    Do you know why?

    09:44-09:45

What have you reduced prayer to?

    09:48-09:48

    Last resort.

    09:48-09:49

    Who said that?

    09:49-09:50

    That's exactly right.

    09:50-09:51

    Last resort.

    09:51-09:57

It's almost like, "Well, if we could buy our way out, we'd buy our way out, but we don't have the money for that.

    09:57-10:01

And if we could think our way out, we'd think our way out, but we don't have the intelligence for that.

    10:02-10:07

If we could personality our way out of this, well, we don't have the charisma for that, we don't even talk that good.

    10:08-10:11

So I guess all we can do is pray.

    10:12-10:12

    Oh, the thought.

    10:14-10:25

Our only resource is the God of the universe, who is eternal and who is sovereign and who is awesome.

    10:26-11:00

Do you know, like, everything you see in this world, in this universe, do you know He created that in six 24-hour days. Did you know that? You have access to that God. And we have the audacity to say, "Well, I guess all you can do is pray." That is a big fail. Don't treat prayer like it's a last resort. I'm going to teach you something different to say. Instead of "I guess all we can do is pray," you need to say, "The best thing we can do is pray." Amen?

    11:01-11:02

The best thing we can do is pray.

    11:04-11:06

That's what you need to say.

    11:09-11:09

    Big fail.

    11:11-11:11

    Well, here's one.

    11:12-11:27

Being a pastor, I talk about these things with people, and I hear people say this, and I want to very lovingly come alongside you and say this is a fail, but when people say this, "Well, you know, Pastor Jeff, I've been kind of praying about this, and oh, you You know what, I know that's a stupid thing to pray about.

    11:30-11:34

Look, I say this with all the love and compassion that I have, but that is a fail.

    11:35-11:37

There is no stupid thing to pray about.

    11:38-11:40

There is no stupid thing to pray about.

    11:41-11:42

    In fact, Jesus addressed that.

    11:42-11:49

Remember, were you here when we, this past, what was it Bob, in January, shameless prayer?

    11:50-11:52

That was the whole point of the story in Luke chapter 11.

    11:52-12:01

this guy's buddy comes over to his house and he's like, "I don't have a snack for this guy, so I'll just go pound on my neighbor's." It's like midnight.

    12:01-12:13

He's like, "I'm going to go pound on my neighbor's house to see if he can get me some Pop-Tarts for my buddy." Because you might think, "Well, that's kind of a silly thing to be so persistently after your neighbor about." But Jesus said, "That's the whole point.

    12:14-12:15

God wants you to bring your needs.

    12:15-12:17

    There's nothing trivial to God.

    12:17-12:28

your needs to God as shameless as a guy looking for pizza rolls at midnight for his buddy." I think they said bread in the Bible, I don't know, these are more liberal translations.

    12:30-12:35

But that's the point of that, three loaves, it wasn't like my friend's starving, it's like we just want a snack.

    12:38-12:41

There's nothing stupid to pray about, there's not.

    12:47-13:04

If Cade came up to you today and said, "You know, I really like Star Wars Angry Birds." Would you say to him, "Well, that's a stupid thing to talk about." No, here's a child coming and I want to talk to you about this and so much more as a parent.

    13:04-13:07

You want your children to bring all that stuff to you, don't you?

    13:07-13:09

Bring that stuff to me so we can talk about it.

    13:09-13:11

    There's nothing stupid, okay?

    13:12-13:13

    You can pray about anything.

    13:17-13:19

    Here's another prayer fail.

    13:19-13:24

I just wrote this down, "Let's pray it safe." Let's pray it safe.

    13:26-13:41

This is very convicting for me because I've been so guilty of this, but we just pray it safe and we say this, "I've been guilty of this." We say this and we pray, "God just be with me today." How many people have prayed that?

    13:41-13:44

I so have, like ad infinitum.

    13:45-13:46

    God be with me today.

    13:49-13:56

If you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, He already is, but I think sometimes we kind of leave it there because we're just praying it's safe.

    13:58-14:01

I would encourage you instead to say, "God, I want to see Your hand at work today.

    14:02-14:04

God, I want to see You move today.

    14:04-14:16

God, I want to see You do things today that I just have to step back and say, 'That had to be God because there's no other explanation for that. Or, you know, God bless grandma.

    14:17-15:50

That's praying it's safe. How about God start a revival in North Carolina through my grandma or whatever. But don't pray it's safe, pray for big things. We're going to talk about that today. But down with this obligatory, "Oh God, just be with me today, amen." Let's get done praying it's safe, more on that in a bit. Last prayer, Phil. It doesn't matter if you pray, God's gonna do what God's gonna do, right? There's some people that have sort of resolved themselves to that attitude, that you know what? God's just gonna do what God's So it really doesn't matter if we pray. And I would say a straightforward reading of the Bible would teach otherwise. Look, I don't believe that God gave us a riddle book. I don't believe that God said -- he's like talking to his angels like, "Let's see if they can figure this out." And He gives us His Word, and we're all down here with our, you know, trying to figure out like what's the meaning between the meaning, and oh, it's like a big long cryptogram, like what do you think this means? I don't believe that at all. I believe God gave us His Word because He wants us to know Him, and He wants us to understand Him, right?

    15:52-15:57

So when we talk about prayer, and I read about prayer in this book, do you know what I read?

    15:59-16:01

Point number one on your outline, write this down.

    16:02-16:12

Here's what I read, "Prayer moves the hand of God." I want you to turn in your Bibles to James chapter 5.

    16:12-16:25

It's going to be all the way near the back of your Bible, right after the book of Hebrews, James chapter 5, we're really going to just be looking at one verse today.

    16:28-16:42

When I was talking to Darren this week about the service, I said, "Really, the sermon is just about two words." He goes, "Great, we'll get out early." Prayer moves the hand of God.

    16:45-16:46

That's what I read in the Bible.

    16:47-17:01

Now listen, I don't care if you're a Calvinist, if you're an Arminian, a Presbyterian, a Baptist, a Methodist, a Republican, or a Vegetarian, the Bible says that when we pray, God moves.

    17:04-17:11

When you read the Old Testament, it says that when people prayed, God moved.

    17:14-17:16

And then you turn to the New Testament, and do you know what it says?

    17:17-17:23

    When people pray, God moves.

    17:24-17:26

That's a straightforward reading of the Bible.

    17:27-17:31

We're going to look at one verse today, James chapter 5 verse 16.

    17:35-17:43

James says, "Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another." Thanks for looking at a couple of verses today.

    17:44-17:52

"Therefore confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed." But look at this next statement.

    17:53-17:55

This is what I want you to hone in on here.

    17:58-18:09

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

    18:14-18:19

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

    18:20-18:26

I believe that it's not my words that have the power, I believe God is the one that has the power, right?

    18:27-18:27

    Right?

    18:28-19:57

reading that right, God has the power. But notice the thing that James ties into the active working of God's power. It's prayer. The prayer of a righteous person has great power. He says the prayer has power, and I believe the reason for that, when you study word is because prayer moves the hand of God. Why does prayer have power? Well, first of all, it has power because of Jesus, right? I'm gonna make sure we clarify. The reason that your prayers are so powerful is because of Jesus Christ, because of his death on the cross and his resurrection, he has given you full access to God. Did you know that? You don't have to go to a priest or go to a minister and say, "I need you to pray to God on my behalf," as if you have some sort of access to God that I don't have. If you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, you have as much access to God as I do, as Billy Graham does, as -- insert your favorite preacher. You have the same access to God, but it's because of Jesus.

    19:59-20:14

Jesus made that possible. Jesus made it possible. Hebrews says we can go to the very throne of God. We can go to God's throne to find mercy and grace in our time of need. We can go right up to God.

    20:18-20:19

    You don't need an intercessor.

    20:21-20:25

There's no mediator other than Jesus Christ Himself.

    20:28-20:29

So that's why there's power in prayer.

    20:30-20:34

There's also power in prayer when it's done according to God's will.

    20:34-20:36

Just jot this down, "Pray for what God wants.

    20:38-20:48

Pray for what God wants." You'll find that the more you walk by the Spirit, the more you spend time in God's Word, the more you spend time in prayer, you start praying for the things that God wants.

    20:49-20:50

We'll talk more about that in a bit.

    20:54-20:59

Prayer power is also done by faith that He will move.

    21:01-21:03

Prayer needs to be prayed expectantly.

    21:04-21:13

We talked about that when we went through the book of Colossians, that when we pray We should be looking to see how God's going to answer the prayer.

    21:13-21:14

God wants us to pray expectantly.

    21:18-21:23

The powerful prayer comes from having the right theology.

    21:26-21:31

Do you know the first prayer that I remember praying, what was your first prayer?

    21:33-21:34

    Here was mine.

    21:34-21:35

    "God is great.

    21:36-21:37

    God is good.

    21:38-21:39

Let us thank Him for our food.

    21:40-21:41

Amen." How many people know that prayer?

    21:43-21:46

I was shocked I got to Bible college and found out that wasn't in the Bible.

    21:48-21:54

However, however, there is a lot of really deep theology in that prayer.

    21:56-21:59

Actually Psalm 62, do we have that for the wall, Psalm 62?

    22:01-22:01

    There it is.

    22:02-22:22

"Once God has spoken, twice have I heard this, that power belongs to God, and that to you, O Lord, belongs steadfast love." The psalmist attributes two things to God there specifically.

    22:23-22:25

    It's power and it's what?

    22:27-22:28

    Love, right?

    22:28-22:29

    It's power and love.

    22:30-22:31

    What's God like?

    22:31-22:36

God is powerful and God is loving, and that's sort of what we teach our children to pray, right?

    22:36-22:39

God is great and God is good.

    22:41-22:48

And then we get to become adults and somehow we lose the sense of how important that is, but how utterly truthful it is.

    22:50-22:52

Powerful prayer is backed by this.

    22:53-22:58

It's believing that God will move because He is able and because He loves me.

    22:58-22:59

    Do you believe that?

    23:01-23:02

    Do you believe that?

    23:05-23:10

Do you believe that powerful prayer is backed by the truth that God is able and because God loves me?

    23:10-23:11

    Do you believe that?

    23:14-23:16

Some of you don't look convinced, so we're going to break it down.

    23:17-23:19

Do you believe that God is able to answer prayer?

    23:20-23:22

A show of hands, do you believe God is able to answer prayer?

    23:23-23:24

    Everybody, fantastic.

    23:24-23:26

I don't have to sell you on that, right?

    23:27-23:29

God is able to answer prayer.

    23:31-23:33

All right, now how many people believe that God loves them?

    23:36-23:41

The cross of Jesus Christ testifies that God loves us.

    23:43-23:58

Okay, so we put those two truths together, that God is able and that God loves me, and What you have is the proper theology for prayer.

    24:01-24:05

What you have is the proper attitude in approaching God in prayer.

    24:05-24:15

"God, I'm crying out to you because I know you're able and because I know you love me." Now listen, confidence in God is not cockiness.

    24:17-24:19

Confidence in praying to God is not cockiness.

    24:19-24:28

It's just a right understanding of who He is when you're able to pray boldly.

    24:32-25:01

Last Monday, as the news came out about the shooting at the Navy Yard, later that evening I turned on Monday Night Football, and the commentators, in speaking of the shooting, they said, "All of our thoughts are with the victims." And then later, right before the game, did you see this?

    25:01-25:05

Before the game, they said, "We're going to take a moment of..." Did you see this?

    25:07-25:21

We're going to take a moment of silent reflection." And I thought, "You know, they won't even say 'pray.' Our thoughts are with them, we'll take silent reflection.

    25:21-25:25

They won't even say 'pray,' let alone pretend to do it." And I was thinking about that.

    25:25-25:30

That's sort of opposite of the church where we actually say it a lot, but only pretend to do it.

    25:34-25:35

Why do we hesitate to pray?

    25:36-25:37

    Why do we hesitate?

    25:42-25:45

Why isn't prayer just default mode for us?

    25:45-25:55

If we know God is all-powerful and we know God loves us with an infinite love, why do some of us struggle to make prayer default mode?

    25:59-26:01

    I put down three things.

    26:01-26:06

There's three things why I believe people struggle with prayer, because sometimes prayer isn't always answered right now.

    26:07-26:09

Prayer isn't always answered right now.

    26:09-26:11

I think that's why some people struggle with prayer.

    26:12-26:19

When I was going to Bible college, I was living out in Ohio, I was working at Walmart.

    26:19-26:20

    I know, I know, don't covet.

    26:21-26:54

But I was working at Walmart and I remember this one day, they had all these bikes out on the sidewalk and this big rainstorm was coming and it was these massive winds coming through and they're like, "Jeff, we need you to go cover "those bikes with a tarp." Well, they had this tarp that was like eight feet wide by about 500 feet long that I had to cover this row of bikes with and I looked like a clown out there trying to figure out with the wind blowing and the tarp twisting and wrapping and flapping and blowing all over the place.

    26:57-26:59

    I remember I stopped.

    27:00-27:01

    I was a little disgusted.

    27:02-27:03

    I just stopped.

    27:03-27:12

I said, "God, if you want these bikes covered, you're going to have to do it." I kid you not.

    27:13-27:22

A gust of wind came, blew the tarp up, flattened it, and rested it on top of the bikes perfectly.

    27:26-27:42

And I remember standing in front of Walmart, looking up at the pitch black sky, and I just said, "Thanks." Well, here's the thing.

    27:43-27:45

I wish all my prayers were answered like that.

    27:46-27:48

I wish all my prayers were answered like that.

    27:52-27:59

You know, for years, actually for about seven and a half years, I've been praying for my son's health.

    27:59-28:10

As many of you know, my older son Owen is pretty severely autistic and non-verbal, and he has a lot of health issues going on, and a lot of cognitive delays.

    28:10-28:30

And I have prayed, I have fasted for years, and oh, that God would have answered that prayer the way He answered the prayer for that stupid tarp and those cheap bicycles.

    28:32-28:36

But the truth is, sometimes prayer isn't always answered right this minute.

    28:40-28:52

Sometimes in prayer God says, "I'm on a different timetable than you on this." That leads me to the next thing, prayer isn't always answered all at once.

    28:53-28:54

Why do we hesitate to pray?

    28:55-28:58

Prayer isn't always answered all at once.

    28:58-29:02

Now, when I say right now I'm talking about time, but when I say all at once I'm talking degree.

    29:09-29:18

Sometimes in prayer, he might not do 100% of the job right that minute, but he might get a process started.

    29:19-29:34

And I can certainly say in talking about Owen, it's been a long seven and a half years since we found out there were some things wrong, but I can tell you this, he's a lot further along now than He was this time last year.

    29:38-29:40

So sometimes it doesn't happen all at once.

    29:42-29:53

Here's another one, last one, "Prayer isn't always answered my way." "It isn't always answered my way," meaning this, prayer isn't about activating some sort of electric force or something.

    29:54-30:01

Prayer is communication with a person, but not just any person, a person who is infinitely wiser than I am.

    30:01-30:27

So my prayer in bringing to my heavenly Father what I want always has to yield with, "But God, if you have a different plan, I'm certainly game because you're a lot smarter than me." And you say, "Well, I struggle with that." You know what, church?

    30:27-30:28

I do too sometimes, I'll be honest with you.

    30:28-30:29

    I struggle with that too.

    30:32-30:34

Why doesn't God just do what I want immediately?

    30:35-30:41

Why does God sometimes take us through these hard roads and through these processes?

    30:45-30:47

Anybody else ever wrestled with that?

    30:47-30:50

Why does God take us through these hard roads sometimes?

    30:53-30:53

    Here's why.

    30:56-31:01

this down, sometimes the process is the point.

    31:03-31:04

Sometimes the process is the point.

    31:04-31:11

You're like, "God, I want this prayer answered," and God's like, "Oh, I'm at work, but we're going to get on a road here." Well, why?

    31:11-31:16

Well, sometimes the point that God is trying to make is through the process.

    31:16-31:17

What do you mean by that?

    31:17-31:28

What I mean is this, when you spend time walking with the Lord and wrestling in prayer with Him over things, what you find over that period is your faith is strengthened.

    31:30-31:34

What you find over that period is God is growing your perseverance.

    31:37-31:41

Bible says, "Let patience have its perfect work." God is growing your perseverance.

    31:42-31:45

God is developing you as a person as you wrestle through these things.

    31:51-31:55

Parents, what would your kids be like if you gave them what they wanted immediately?

    31:56-31:59

Every time they asked, no matter what they asked for, what would your kids be like?

    32:00-32:00

Go ahead and shout it out.

    32:03-32:04

    Spoiled brats, right?

    32:05-32:06

Wouldn't your kids be spoiled brats?

    32:07-32:10

"Mommy, I want this." Boom, here it is.

    32:11-32:14

"Mommy, I want Chuck E. Cheese." We'll get in the car, here we go.

    32:16-32:20

"Mommy, I want a pony." "Okay, Daddy, get out there and build that fence.

    32:20-32:25

We're getting a pony." Your kids would be unbearable.

    32:26-32:30

We'd have to like start our own ministry at this church just for your little brat.

    32:34-32:35

    But you don't do that.

    32:39-32:47

And sometimes I believe that God in His wisdom realizes there's some maturing that needs to happen in us.

    32:49-32:58

There's some strength and some perseverance that needs to develop in us, but the ultimate goal really is about growing closer to Jesus.

    33:00-33:09

You know, if you accumulate the time that Aaron and I have prayed for our kids over the past seven years.

    33:12-33:14

How many minutes of that prayer time would you say was wasted?

    33:17-33:18

    The answer is not.

    33:19-33:35

If God is taking us through this process where we're drawing closer to Jesus in prayer, where we're learning greater dependence upon God in prayer, we're learning about the love and The patience and grace of God through prayer?

    33:39-33:45

There's a sense in which you can be thankful for the very affliction that's driving you to your knees.

    33:46-33:51

Because sometimes the point is God's taking you through a process.

    33:52-33:53

    The process is the point.

    33:58-34:00

    You totally get that, right?

    34:01-34:02

How many of you have seen a movie?

    34:03-34:04

Anybody here ever seen a movie?

    34:05-34:06

Some of you have never seen a movie.

    34:09-34:14

There's these buildings that have these giant screens, even bigger than this one, where they show a moving picture show.

    34:16-34:18

Some of them are in color and have sound now.

    34:19-34:20

How many people have seen a movie?

    34:20-34:20

    Come on.

    34:20-34:21

    It's not a trick question.

    34:21-34:22

    Okay, thank you.

    34:24-34:27

Sometimes I just throw those things out to see who's still tuned in.

    34:28-34:39

Like, "No, I've never seen a movie." "Oh, yeah, movie, movie." movie. All right, refined search. How many of you have seen Rocky? Any of the Rockys?

    34:41-35:14

Okay, which Rocky is the best? Who said one? I'm sorry, that's not the right answer. I wasn't asking your opinion, there's a right answer to this. No, I'm sorry Justin, it's not to. Rocky 3 is the best one because it has Hulk Hogan in it. And Club Alang. Rocky 4 wasn't bad either. I kind of lost track after, I didn't see anything after Rocky 4.

    35:20-35:27

Let's pretend that we're on our way to see Rocky III.

    35:28-35:30

    You've never seen it before.

    35:36-35:36

    But I have.

    35:37-35:45

Let's say we're on the way and I'm like, "Hey, let me tell you how the movie ends." You're like, "I don't want to hear how the movie ends.

    35:45-35:50

Don't you hate when people spoil it for you?" Now, let me tell you how it ends.

    35:50-35:53

You know what, let's, I'll tell you what, let's go get something to eat.

    35:53-36:02

I'll just tell you how the movie ends and we won't have to see it." And you would say, "I want to see the movie, right?" I'm like, "No, no, no, no, no, no, you're not listening.

    36:04-36:06

You don't, you don't have to see the movie.

    36:07-36:08

I will tell you how it ends.

    36:10-36:12

I will save you a couple hours.

    36:14-36:18

You don't have to see the movie, but I want to see the movie.

    36:21-36:25

Why would you want to see the movie if I'll tell you how it ends?

    36:31-36:41

Because going to see the movie is about enjoying watching the story unfold to lead up to the ending, right?

    36:41-36:43

Isn't that why you go to the movies?

    36:44-37:17

Otherwise, when a new movie comes out, you just go to Wikipedia, read the synopsis and be like, "Okay, got that one down." It's about going to see, you know, here's a character and here's how the story unfolds and here's the trials he goes through and then Hulk Hogan throws him over the top rope and then, you know, the big fight with Clubber lying at the end, "You ain't so bad." And I don't want to spoil it in case somebody hasn't seen it, but it's about experiencing the process, right?

    37:25-37:38

Brothers and sisters, sometimes that's what God's doing in us, to say, "There's an answer But in the meantime, we're working on your story.

    37:39-38:01

I am weaving this beautiful story of my grace and your dependence and my provision, and I'm weaving this beautiful story through your life that when the prayer gets answered, you're going to stand up and say, "This is how awesome my God is." It's about the process.

    38:03-38:04

Prayer is an act of faith.

    38:04-38:06

We talk about faith a lot.

    38:07-38:08

Faith is not a ticket to heaven.

    38:08-38:10

Faith is a relationship with God.

    38:11-38:13

    Faith doesn't control God.

    38:13-38:15

    Faith trusts God.

    38:17-38:23

But faith means that God is working even when I don't see what He's doing and even when I don't understand what He's doing.

    38:26-38:28

Because faith ultimately means this church.

    38:30-38:52

When I'm wrestling in prayer with God about something, I'm embracing two truths with everything that I have, and these two truths are this, "God is great, and He loves me." So as I close, here's what I want to challenge you on.

    38:52-38:56

    Number two, pray big things.

    39:00-39:04

The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

    39:04-39:16

It has power, it's working, but I want you to focus on just one more word here, and that word is "great." Prayer has great power.

    39:18-39:20

    Prayer doesn't have little power.

    39:26-39:27

    Prayer has great power.

    39:30-39:36

That's why I'm going to challenge you and I'm going to encourage you to ask God for the impossible.

    39:42-39:49

Not only is that an option, but I believe that you should ask God for the impossible, knowing that God's abilities surpass our audacity.

    39:53-39:56

You understand that you're never going to exceed God's capacity.

    39:56-39:57

    Did you know that?

    39:58-40:04

Like, you know what, I'd really like to pray about this, but I don't think God can cover this one.

    40:10-40:16

You know, I really need to pray for God to make a financial provision in my life, but You know, maybe God's being affected by this recession too.

    40:21-40:22

You know, I really need to pray.

    40:24-40:39

This family member had a stroke, and I need to pray about it, but I mean, if the medical doctors seem a little, you know, like they're having a hard time with it, why would I think that God's able to handle it?

    40:40-40:42

You are never going to exceed God's capacity.

    40:45-40:54

So, not only pray, not only should you come before God and pray big things, but I also want to encourage you to move forward by faith when you pray big things.

    40:58-41:07

You should be seeking God for the impossible, and you should be moving forward by faith to see how God is going to answer that prayer, or to put it in Old Testament terms.

    41:09-41:18

Remember God would tell Israel that He's going to win the battle for them, but you know they They still strapped on their armor and went out to fight, right?

    41:19-41:21

It wasn't like, "Oh, God's going to win the battle?

    41:21-41:23

Okay, I'm just going to stay home and play Xbox.

    41:23-41:26

God's got this." They still went to battle.

    41:26-41:27

    Why?

    41:28-41:36

Because them moving forward was an active act of their faith, to say, "I believe God's Word.

    41:36-41:49

I believe He's going to show up, and I'm moving, trusting that He's going to." In the same way, church, when you pray and you ask God for the impossible, you too need to move forward by faith.

    41:51-41:52

    Pray and prepare.

    41:56-41:58

Meaning this, maybe you're having a rough marriage right now.

    42:00-42:01

Maybe you're having a rough marriage.

    42:03-42:05

Well, you need to be praying for your spouse.

    42:06-42:08

Like, "Okay, that's what I'm going to do.

    42:08-42:15

I'm going to move out, I'm going to get my own apartment, and I'm going to pray for my wife that God would change her heart." That might not be the best plan.

    42:16-42:29

Maybe you should pray that God would work on both of your hearts, and in the meantime, writing letters to your wife, buying gifts for your wife, taking your wife out on dates, giving her words of affirmation.

    42:30-42:48

Maybe you should be doing those things in the meantime while you're praying for God to change your hearts. Maybe you have a need for a job. I'm just going to stay at home and see if any major corporations show up at my door and offer me a job.

    42:50-43:29

Pray and put out the resume. Pray, put out the application. Pray, talk to people, but pray that God would be leading you and providing for you to the job that He want you to have. Maybe you're praying for your health to say, "You know what, God, I haven't been taking care of this physical body at all, God, and God, I pray that you would really help turn my health around." Well, maybe that means also while you're praying for that, you need to change some eating habits, change some lifestyle habits. You're praying for a six-pack and you're eating Krispy Kremes by the handful.

    43:30-43:31

    Not a good plan.

    43:33-43:34

"So what are you saying, Pastor Jeff?

    43:34-43:36

You're saying that God needs our help?" No.

    43:37-43:40

I'm saying by faith, you're cooperating with God's purposes.

    43:41-43:41

    That's all.

    43:42-43:49

You're praying for something, you're saying, "God, I'm going to cooperate with your purposes." Don't pray for rain and forget to take your umbrella.

    43:51-43:54

Are you wrestling in prayer over something right now?

    43:56-44:03

As I close, I want to just encourage you in this, church.

    44:06-44:13

Sometimes all that is between you and answered prayer is time.

    44:16-44:20

And the question is, what are you going to do in the meantime?

    44:22-44:22

    Look back at this verse.

    44:23-44:24

If the worship team would make their way forward.

    44:26-44:32

Look back up at this verse, James 15, verses 16 and 17.

    44:33-44:34

    He talks about Elijah.

    44:36-44:43

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth.

    44:43-44:45

We kind of get fixated on that three and a half year thing.

    44:46-44:48

    Like, wow, could you imagine?

    44:48-44:49

    Could you imagine?

    44:49-44:54

Like, he prayed and like, the heavenly spigot was shut off.

    44:54-44:55

God did not allow it to rain.

    44:56-44:57

Like, wow, wow, that was awesome.

    44:58-44:58

    And it was.

    44:59-45:00

    It was awesome.

    45:00-45:07

But, I think sometimes we miss the other part of that verse.

    45:09-45:11

Which I really think was James' point.

    45:13-45:18

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours.

    45:22-45:23

    Elijah was just a guy.

    45:25-45:26

He was just a human being.

    45:27-45:29

He was just someone who loved the Lord.

    45:33-45:36

You know the only difference between you and Elijah?

    45:37-45:38

    You know what it is?

    45:38-46:17

only difference between you and Elijah is Elijah asked. Elijah asked. Earlier in James in chapter 4 and verse 2 he says, "You do not have because you do not ask." And I have to ask myself, "How much of my life have I longed for and forfeited just because I didn't ask?" Here's the challenge I want to lay before you this week, church.

    46:18-46:20

Not just this week, I would say as long as it takes.

    46:21-46:22

With your bulletin, did you get a little slip of paper?

    46:24-46:25

I want you to take that out.

    46:30-46:36

Because at Harvest Bible Chapel we believe firmly in the power of prayer.

    46:39-46:50

And because we believe firmly in the power of prayer, because we believe that God is great and that God loves us, I'm encouraging you to pray big things.

    46:53-46:54

Here's what I want you to do.

    46:55-47:09

On this slip of paper it says, "I'm bringing this to God because He loves me, because He is powerful, and because I believe in the power of prayer." Is there something in your life right now that you need God to show up for?

    47:11-47:17

Is there something in your life right now where you're saying, "God, I need You.

    47:18-47:26

God, if you don't show up, this isn't going to happen.

    47:28-47:29

I want you to write that down.

    47:31-47:32

I want you to write that down.

    47:34-47:35

    And look underneath here.

    47:36-47:37

This is what I want you to do.

    47:37-47:38

I want you to write this down.

    47:38-47:46

I want you to stick this in your Bible so when you spend time in God's Word, and you spend time in prayer, I want you to pull this out and I want you to pray for this request.

    47:49-48:09

I want you to pray over this. I want you to pray believing that God hears you, because He does. I want you to pray believing that God has the power to answer it, because He does. And I want you to pray believing that God loves you and is going to accomplish His purpose in your life because He will and He does.

    48:11-48:14

A couple tips for you here at the bottom to keep in mind when you pray.

    48:14-48:16

I encourage you first of all, pray according to God's will.

    48:18-48:22

Pray according to God's will, meaning this, why are you asking God for this?

    48:25-48:27

I make this a habit when I pray.

    48:27-48:37

God, the reason that I'm asking you this is because, the reason I do that, the reason I'm encouraging you to do that is it lets us wrestle with our motives before God.

    48:40-48:45

"You know, God, I really need you to give me a lot of money because I really need a sports car." Well, wait a minute.

    48:46-48:50

Am I praying according to God's will or according to Jeff's selfishness?

    48:52-48:57

I really don't pray for that, but if you want to give me a sports car, I won't turn you down.

    48:58-48:59

But pray according to God's will.

    49:01-49:02

    Pray for what God wants.

    49:03-49:04

Why are you asking God for this?

    49:04-49:07

Secondly, I would encourage you this, pray according to His promises.

    49:08-49:09

What has God promised in His Word?

    49:11-49:12

    We saw some today, right?

    49:12-49:16

The prayer of a righteous man has great power as it is working.

    49:17-49:18

    Pray according to His promises.

    49:19-49:21

"God, You promised that You would provide for me.

    49:21-49:31

God, You promised that if I sought You first, You would give me the things that I need." That's praying according to God's promises.

    49:33-49:35

Thirdly, I would say pray recalling His past goodness.

    49:36-49:37

You see this all through the Bible, right?

    49:38-49:43

Israel was always like, "You are the Lord our God who brought us out of Egypt." You know why they kept saying that?

    49:43-49:48

They were remembering, "God, You love us and You have so miraculously provided for us in the past.

    49:48-49:56

That's why we cry out to You today." So pray recalling his past goodness, how has God shown his faithfulness to you previously?

    49:57-50:03

And the last thing is move forward in faith, meaning this, how are you going to cooperate with his purposes?

    50:04-50:06

How are you going to cooperate with his purposes?

    50:08-50:09

    This isn't a magic ticket.

    50:12-50:14

This is an encouragement to pray biblically.

    50:16-50:23

This is an encouragement to take God at His Word and to believe firmly in the power of prayer.

    50:25-50:32

As we close today, I'm going to come down here and pray because I have some big things that I need to pray about.

    50:33-50:35

Now, there's nothing magical about this area, okay?

    50:36-50:37

    This isn't the altar.

    50:38-50:40

It's not like there's more Holy Spirit up here or anything.

    50:41-50:42

    Nothing like that at all.

    50:43-50:46

So why do we encourage people to come forward and pray sometimes?

    50:46-50:53

Well, the reason that sometimes we do that is because stepping forward is an act of faith.

    50:54-50:56

Could you pray over these things in your seat?

    50:56-50:57

    Of course you can.

    50:58-51:01

But I think there's something special about, "I'm stepping up.

    51:02-51:13

God, I'm moving my feet forward and I'm moving up because I'm not content to just sit in my seat and think about whether I should bring these things before you in prayer.

    51:14-51:15

So I'm going to be down here.

    51:15-51:17

Robert, would you come down and pray with me too, man?

    51:17-51:18

We're gonna be down here praying.

    51:18-51:22

If you wanna come up, I just ask the worship team, if they'd play quietly for a few minutes.

    51:24-51:26

Come up and cry out to the Lord with us.

    51:27-51:35

And after we spend some time in prayer, I'll pray over the congregation and we'll have our closing song, okay?

    51:36-51:36

    So let's pray.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read James 5:16-18

  1. Specifically, what was the last prayer you saw directly and unquestionably answered?

  2. What was the last thing you prayed for that was audacious / shameless / impossible? What was the result?

Breakout Questions:

  1. What “big thing” do you need to pray for right now? Are you boldly praying for it?

  2. Pray for one another.

Unrestrained Praise

  • 00:00-00:18

The title of today's message is "Harvest DNA, Unrestrained Praise." And that's what we're going after this month, asking the question, "What kind of a church is this?" Now I have a visual here that… is that good?

    00:19-00:20

    A little to the left?

    00:21-00:22

Oh, now somebody's saying a little to the right.

    00:23-00:24

Oh, come on, I think you're messing with me now.

    00:26-00:27

What kind of a church is this?

    00:28-00:33

A couple of weeks ago we said we are a church that has a mission from Jesus Christ.

    00:33-00:34

    And what is our mission?

    00:35-00:40

Is to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission and the spirit of the Great Commandment.

    00:41-00:45

And Harvest Bible Chapel stands on four pillars.

    00:46-00:55

And last week we talked about the first pillar, which is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    00:56-00:58

Is God sorry that He said some things?

    00:59-01:00

    Is He?

    01:00-01:01

    No.

    01:01-01:03

God is not sorry that He said anything.

    01:04-01:08

God is perfect and God is holy and God is truth.

    01:08-01:14

And when we stand up to proclaim the Word of God, we're not sorry for the things that He said either.

    01:15-01:15

    Okay?

    01:16-01:18

So we proclaim the authority of God's Word without apology.

    01:19-01:28

Today we're going to talk about the second pillar, which is lifting high the name of Jesus in worship.

    01:31-01:53

You know, many years ago, many, many years ago, when I was just a young preacher, I remember sitting in a preacher's meeting, and there were a whole lot of older preachers at this meeting, and this was the question that was on the table.

    01:55-01:57

Why don't people really get into worship?

    01:59-02:08

And the preachers all sort of went around, and I'm just paraphrasing here, but basically what every preacher said was, "Yeah, worship's pretty lame at our church.

    02:09-02:12

Yeah, people in our church don't really seem to get into worship.

    02:12-02:15

They don't really get excited about worship.

    02:15-02:17

They don't really get what worship's about.

    02:17-02:24

And at the end of the meeting, everybody just kind of took a sigh like, "I guess that's just how it is.

    02:25-02:27

And how do we fix it?

    02:27-02:28

    And I don't know.

    02:29-02:48

People are people." I walked away from that meeting, again this was very early on in my ministry, but I walked away from that meeting thinking, "Something's just not right about that." And I didn't have the answer, believe me.

    02:51-03:09

But I knew there's something seriously wrong when you have a room full of preachers that are just like, "We don't get the worship thing." It took me many years before I realized what was missing, and here the whole time the answer was in the Bible.

    03:11-03:15

So if you're taking notes, write this down first.

    03:17-03:20

    I was created to worship.

    03:24-03:26

    I was created to worship.

    03:32-03:33

    That's why you're here.

    03:35-03:37

That's why you're on the earth.

    03:37-03:41

That's why this morning God gave you permission to take a breath.

    03:42-03:45

    You are here to worship.

    03:46-03:48

That is your reason for being.

    03:49-03:54

And you're like, "Pastor Jeff, if you're going to make a claim like that, you better be able to back it up." Okay.

    03:55-03:56

    Challenge noted.

    03:58-03:59

    Here's a few verses.

    03:59-04:00

    These are just a few.

    04:00-04:05

If I was going to list all of the verses, we'd miss the Steeler game tomorrow night.

    04:06-04:06

    Okay?

    04:06-04:07

    Here's just a few.

    04:09-04:14

Isaiah 43, 21, "The people whom I formed for myself that they might," what?

    04:15-04:18

"Declare my praise." Oh, that's so Old Testament, Pastor Jeff.

    04:18-05:02

First Peter 2, 9, New Testament, "But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light." Hebrews 13:5 says, "Through Him," through Jesus then, "let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name." Matthew chapter 4, when Jesus was being tempted by the devil, one of the temptations was Satan challenged Jesus to just bow down and worship him and he'd hand him every kingdom of the world.

    05:02-05:04

    Remember Jesus' response?

    05:04-05:04

    Do you remember?

    05:06-05:08

"Be gone, Satan, for it is written," what?

    05:09-05:24

"You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve." In 423, Jesus, talking with the woman at the well, said that the Father is seeking what?

    05:25-05:26

    What's God seeking?

    05:27-05:28

    He's seeking worshippers.

    05:30-05:31

    He's seeking worshippers.

    05:32-05:35

We're going to talk about that passage here in just a couple of minutes.

    05:38-05:42

Revelation chapters 4 and 5, what's happening in heaven right now, do you know?

    05:43-05:44

Do you know what's happening in heaven right now?

    05:46-05:47

Shout it out if you know.

    05:49-05:49

    Worship right!

    05:50-05:56

In heaven right now is the loudest, most exciting worship service.

    05:56-06:00

This is the mother of all worship services and I can't wait to be there to be part of it.

    06:01-06:04

I'm not that great of a singer but I am so going to be part of that worship service.

    06:05-06:12

When I shed this body of sin and get the glorified body, I'm going to be able to worship much better than I'm able to now.

    06:12-06:16

And I am so looking forward to that because what's happening in heaven right now, worship.

    06:17-06:19

    Worship is happening in heaven.

    06:19-06:22

Cover to cover in your Bible, it's worship.

    06:22-06:22

    It's worship.

    06:23-06:27

Actually, the biggest book in the Bible is what?

    06:29-06:33

The book of Psalms, the one that's right in the middle, and that is Israel's worship book.

    06:34-06:36

    Those were their worship songs.

    06:40-06:45

And everybody said, "Okay, I'm convinced." Really?

    06:47-06:49

I'm going to give you another run at that.

    06:49-06:50

    Okay, I'm convinced.

    06:52-06:53

    Some of you aren't yet.

    06:57-06:58

    What is worship?

    07:00-07:01

    What is worship?

    07:04-07:05

    Well, here's an answer.

    07:06-07:11

is the most controversial, debated, and church-dividing topic that there is.

    07:11-07:12

    True or false?

    07:13-07:13

    True or false?

    07:14-07:15

    True.

    07:16-07:16

    True.

    07:19-07:29

You talk to any pastor of any church, ask them, "What are some hotly debated topics in your church?" Obviously, one is money, right?

    07:34-07:38

But almost entirely across the board you're going to hear something about worship.

    07:40-07:43

Worship it's controversial, it's debated, it's church dividing.

    07:44-07:45

    What is worship?

    07:45-07:49

Well first of all, let's get this right off the table here.

    07:49-07:51

Here are some worship fails, right?

    07:52-07:54

And I took a run at this last week.

    07:54-07:59

I always turn to Justin Cady to find out what's hip, what the young kids are saying because I'm a lot older than I look.

    08:00-08:02

And they're still saying fail, right?

    08:03-08:17

Like when people attempt something and it just doesn't work out, they're like, "Fail." So here are some worship fails, or some top complaints about worship for us older people.

    08:19-08:20

    Worship fails, jot these down.

    08:22-08:23

    Worship is too repetitive.

    08:24-08:25

    Have you heard that complaint?

    08:26-08:26

    It's too repetitive.

    08:28-08:29

    It's too repetitive.

    08:31-08:32

Thank you, Pastor Jeff, too repetitive.

    08:35-08:58

Isaiah chapter 6, when Isaiah saw the Lord, the worship that was happening around the presence of God, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts." Interestingly, Revelation 4:8 says, "And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within." These are angels, these are heavenly beings.

    08:58-09:13

It says, "And day and night they never cease to say, 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.'" Never cease to say.

    09:17-09:22

Another worship fail, another complaint about worship is, "Worship is too long.

    09:23-09:33

It's too long." It took me many years to realize that there were some hymns that had a third verse, right?

    09:34-09:35

Anybody else grew up in a church like that?

    09:37-09:41

Get out your hymnals and we're going to sing first, second, and last verse, right?

    09:45-09:47

I'm like, "What's happening with the third verse here?

    09:48-10:21

Is it like heathen verbiage in that or something?" Like you know what, the hymn writers, you take your Wesley's, you take your Isaac Watts, you take your hymn writers, they started off the first couple of verses really strong and they ended strong, but it seems like every time they got to the third verse of the hymn they just had a complete brain freeze and just put the most incomprehensible drivel down, "We hate the third verse." Well let's just do that.

    10:21-10:23

In fact, let's not even do first, second, and last.

    10:23-10:24

Let's just do first and last.

    10:24-10:26

You know, let's just cut to the chase and do the last.

    10:26-10:56

we just sing three words and get right to the sermon, worship is too long. Oh, you mean it feels like eternity? Oh, you mean like heaven? We are not going to abbreviate the worship at this church. We're not. And you'll find out why here in a few minutes if you're still not convinced because I have a sense that some of you are not, we are not going to abbreviate the worship.

    10:58-11:01

Because listen, that's why we're here.

    11:03-11:04

    That's why we're here.

    11:04-11:06

    We are here to worship.

    11:09-11:13

    Here's another complaint, too new.

    11:14-11:15

    Too new.

    11:15-11:16

    Have you heard this complaint?

    11:16-11:17

    Maybe you've said it.

    11:18-11:19

"I don't like these new songs.

    11:21-11:22

I don't like these new songs.

    11:22-11:23

Can't we just sing the hymns?

    11:27-11:31

I promise you there is not a person in this room that loves the hymns more than I do.

    11:32-11:33

    I love hymns.

    11:34-11:35

    Love hymns.

    11:35-11:38

I love modern rendition of old hymns.

    11:38-11:38

    Love.

    11:40-11:46

However, do you know there's only one song that the Lord tells us to sing in the Bible?

    11:46-11:47

    Did you know that?

    11:48-11:58

Psalm 96 and verse 1 says, "Sing to the Lord a new song." Sing to the Lord a new song.

    11:58-12:02

I was just reading this in a different psalm last night, I believe it was Psalm 144.

    12:02-12:05

Singing to the Lord a new song, what's that all about?

    12:05-12:09

Well, I'm sure Charles Wesley had his thing, right, with God.

    12:09-12:10

He had a good relationship with God.

    12:10-12:15

He had a relationship and a growing relationship with God.

    12:15-12:17

I'm sure Charles Wesley had his thing going on.

    12:19-12:31

So you mean to tell me, church, that there hasn't been a fresh experience, a fresh, joyful response to the goodness and the majesty and the love of the Lord?

    12:31-12:34

There hasn't been a fresh response since Charles Wesley's day?

    12:38-12:39

    Please hear me.

    12:39-12:48

I love the hymns, but I really struggle with people that believe that hymns are the only types of songs that you can have because God says to sing a new song.

    12:49-12:51

Bring to me a fresh expression of praise.

    12:55-12:55

    Too new.

    12:57-12:58

    Here's our fourth worship fail.

    12:59-13:00

Worship should make me feel good.

    13:01-13:02

    How do you evaluate worship?

    13:02-13:04

Well, really it should make me feel good.

    13:05-13:07

    That is a result.

    13:08-13:08

    True.

    13:09-13:13

That is a result, but that is not the motive of worship.

    13:14-13:15

    You understand that?

    13:16-13:19

The worship team is not up here to try to make you feel good.

    13:21-13:22

That's a result, but that's not the motive.

    13:22-13:29

The motive is entering into God's presence as a congregation and lifting up our voices.

    13:36-13:37

    Last worship fail.

    13:42-13:44

And this usually happens at the end of the service.

    13:45-13:47

People leave saying, "Well, I didn't really get anything out of that.

    13:48-13:58

I was in that worship service and these guys were obviously all talented musicians, but I really didn't get anything out of it." That is a huge fail because worship is not for you.

    14:03-14:11

Worship is about, this is so important, that worship is about giving, not getting.

    14:15-14:23

And this is a tough thing to try to convince people of in our consumer culture.

    14:25-14:31

Because we base everything, whether it's the retail store or the restaurant or whatever, it's what did I get out of it?

    14:31-14:33

    What benefits me?

    14:33-14:34

And what's in it for me?

    14:34-14:36

And how did that make me feel?

    14:36-14:37

    And me, me, me.

    14:38-14:44

And sadly, we come to church and we say, "Well, I didn't really get anything out of that." Well, maybe that's the problem.

    14:44-15:00

Maybe you came expecting that you were going to get something instead of coming saying, "I'm going to give something." Worship is something you give, and you experience the joy when you pour yourself out in giving it.

    15:02-15:10

And I know that doesn't seem to make human sense, but I can't think of any of the ways of the Lord that make human sense, can you?

    15:11-15:12

    You want maximum joy?

    15:13-15:14

    You have to give it.

    15:14-15:15

    Worship is about giving.

    15:16-15:19

Do you know what the first reference is in the Old Testament to worship?

    15:19-15:30

The first time the word "worship" is used in the Old Testament, Genesis 22, Abraham said he was going to worship when he was going to offer up Isaac as a sacrifice.

    15:32-15:33

    We are going to worship.

    15:35-15:38

Abraham knew that, and you know the rest of the story, right?

    15:38-15:44

Spoiler alert, God shows up, don't sacrifice your son, and I'm sorry if I ruined that for anybody.

    15:46-15:49

Incredible, incredible story with so much meaning.

    15:51-15:52

But here's what I want you to get.

    15:52-15:54

In Abraham's mind he said, "I'm going to worship, man.

    15:54-15:56

I'm going to give God something.

    15:57-16:13

I'm going to give." First time worship is used in the New Testament is in Matthew chapter 2, when the Magi show up to toddler Jesus, and they come to what?

    16:14-16:15

    "Hey, Jesus is born.

    16:15-16:17

What did I get?" Oh, that's America, right?

    16:18-16:19

    That's what we do.

    16:19-16:20

    "We're going to celebrate Jesus.

    16:21-16:25

What did you get me for Christmas?" Well, when the Magi showed up, they came to worship, and they came to do what?

    16:26-16:27

    Give, right?

    16:27-16:29

    Worship is about giving.

    16:31-16:40

And if you're not ready to give, you're going to leave saying, "Well, I didn't really get anything out of that." So let's get it right biblically.

    16:41-16:41

    All in favor?

    16:43-16:45

All right, let's get it right biblically.

    16:45-16:47

Here's the biblical definition of worship.

    16:48-16:57

Actually in the Hebrew, the word that you find in the Old Testament, the word "worship" literally means to fall before someone.

    16:58-17:05

That's literally what the word means, that you get down on your face, head on the ground.

    17:07-17:08

That's the Hebrew word for worship.

    17:10-17:13

I am in the presence of somebody greater than I am.

    17:14-17:15

    That's worship.

    17:15-17:18

In the New Testament, there are really two words that are used.

    17:19-17:30

One, proskuneo, is literally "kiss toward," like kissing the hand.

    17:34-17:49

Latreo is "giving homage." That's the other New Testament word, "giving homage." Again, it's the idea of I am in the presence of someone greater than myself.

    17:50-17:57

And some will say, "Well, you know what, Pastor Jeff, you know when I worship, to me cutting the grass is worship.

    17:58-17:59

    That's really when I worship.

    17:59-18:04

You know, when I cook a meal for my sick neighbor, that to me is worship.

    18:04-18:08

You know, when I go to work and try to do the right thing, that to me is worship.

    18:08-18:14

Now all of those things may invoke an awareness of God, but those things are not worship.

    18:15-18:20

You can do them to the glory of God, for sure, but those things are not worship.

    18:21-18:29

Worship is the conscious, direct, specific adoration of one greater than ourselves.

    18:32-18:34

    It's a completely selfless emotion.

    18:36-18:44

So when we come to this worship service, whether this is your 50th time or your first time, certainly worship includes praying.

    18:44-18:47

    Worship includes giving the offering.

    18:48-18:50

    And worship even includes preaching.

    18:55-19:07

But again, pausing there, for some people the worship time, the music time is the thing that we kind of hurry up and get out of the way because the preaching is the main event.

    19:08-19:31

And I completely disagree with that. I ran into this pastor who was talking about his church and he said, he goes, "You know what, the worship at our church is just absolutely fantastic but I'll tell you what, it's just the purpose of that music is just to get you ready for the sermon.

    19:31-19:32

That's the main reason we're there.

    19:32-19:42

That music is just to get you ready for the sermon." And I just told him, I'm like, "Man, we are on completely different pages here." I said, "It's actually the exact opposite at our church.

    19:43-19:45

My job as a preacher is to make you better worshipers.

    19:50-19:57

And I would suggest to you that the most worshipful thing that we do is collectively ascribing worth to God.

    19:58-20:00

And why do we do it to music?

    20:03-20:05

Why are the Psalms set to music?

    20:08-20:12

Well, that's to keep worship from being just merely an intellectual exercise.

    20:13-20:28

See if that's all worship was, was an intellectual exercise, we could just get together and say, "Okay, everybody, we're going to stand up here in a couple of minutes and open your Bibles and we're just going to read the words out loud and you can be on your way and we'll say that we worship today.

    20:30-20:31

I think that could be done worshipfully.

    20:32-20:41

However, the reason that we worship in music and the reason that the Psalms were set to music is because that brings the emotions into it.

    20:45-20:48

We don't just sing about God.

    20:51-20:52

We should be singing to God.

    20:53-20:53

    Okay?

    20:54-20:58

So first thing, I was created to worship.

    20:59-21:00

Now I want you to turn to your Bibles.

    21:03-21:06

Second point here, Jesus answers the worship questions.

    21:06-21:11

Alright, is there a greater expert on the topic than Jesus Christ?

    21:13-21:16

Then I would suggest maybe we see what he says about worship.

    21:16-21:18

I want you to turn to John chapter 4.

    21:22-21:23

Come on, turn nice and loud.

    21:25-21:26

    That's better, thank you.

    21:27-21:28

    John chapter 4.

    21:32-21:46

We're going to be looking at just a few verses, but this passage is really, really the center piece of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    21:47-21:55

I've shared this with you before, but the harvest symbol actually comes from John chapter 4 and verse 24.

    21:55-21:57

That symbol, the flame, represents spirit.

    22:00-22:03

And the book representing the Bible represents truth.

    22:04-22:09

And this symbol is sort of a reminder for us that this is who we are as a church.

    22:09-22:11

    Our church is about worship.

    22:12-22:13

And we'll see why here in a second.

    22:16-22:32

Many people associate Harvest Bible Chapel with preaching because you listen to James McDonald's podcasts on the radio or you read his books and you typically associate it with preaching but he will tell you that his job as a preacher is to make you a better worshiper.

    22:35-22:37

So in John chapter 4, I want to give you the context.

    22:37-22:42

I could preach about 30 different sermons from this passage.

    22:42-22:44

It's so rich and Jesus is teaching so much.

    22:45-22:46

But I want to give you a little context here.

    22:46-22:51

Jesus was actually passing through Samaria and He stopped in a town called Sychar.

    22:53-22:59

And He was sitting beside a well and it was around noon and verse 7 says that a woman came to the well.

    22:59-23:07

Now most of the woman would have come to the well early in the morning or later in the evening when it wasn't the heat of the day.

    23:10-23:17

But she came when no one else was there, we'll find out later here in the passage, because she was disreputable.

    23:17-23:20

She didn't have a lot of friends, she was looked down on.

    23:25-23:41

And so she comes to the well to draw water and Jesus is sitting there and he asks her water, which completely shocked her because Samaritans, which she was, and Jews, which Jesus was, Samaritans and Jews did not get along.

    23:43-23:44

    You know why?

    23:46-23:47

You ready for a quick history lesson?

    23:50-23:56

I mean how many times have we heard like, you know, the preacher say, "Well, Samaritans and Jews didn't get along." Like, do you want to know why?

    23:56-23:57

    Here's why.

    23:59-24:00

    were actually half Jewish.

    24:01-24:04

And it goes back to King Solomon's day.

    24:04-24:15

Right after his rule, remember the kingdom split, the northern kingdom was actually renamed Samaria by King Omri.

    24:15-24:17

That happened in 1 Kings 16.24.

    24:19-24:44

What about 722 BC, the nation of Assyria conquered northern Israel and they brought many non-Jews, Gentiles, into Samaria, and they intermarried the Jews that were still there, and they created a race of people that were half-Jewish, the Samaritans, and that resulted in racial problems with full-blooded Jews.

    24:47-24:51

So really the whole Jewish-Samaritan thing, it's really a race issue.

    24:54-25:04

And it didn't help that the Samaritans actually withdrew from worship in Jerusalem, and they established their worship in a different place at Mount Gerizim.

    25:09-25:20

So in this passage, after she expresses her shock that a Jewish man would talk to a Samaritan woman, Jesus offered her living water, which is eternal life in verses 14 and 15.

    25:24-25:32

She says, "I'd like some of that." And Jesus said, "Call your husband." And she says, "I have no husband." And Jesus pointed out to her who she really was.

    25:35-25:37

But then look at verses 19 through 20.

    25:37-25:38

    We'll pick it up here.

    25:40-25:43

The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

    25:43-26:02

Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where we ought to worship." Interestingly, after Jesus points out her sin, like, you know, "Call your husband.

    26:02-26:19

I have no husband." That's because you've been bouncing around, and you've had a lot of husbands, and you're with somebody now who's not your husband." It seems as if the woman just says, "Let's change the subject.

    26:21-26:27

We talk about something else." I don't believe she was insincere, but I do believe that she was feeling the heat.

    26:29-26:30

She goes, "Let's talk about something else.

    26:32-26:41

Let's talk about worship." Jews, right, you Jews are all about Jerusalem, but Samaritans are all about, you know, Mount Gerizim.

    26:43-26:49

So let's talk about worship and Jesus said, "Let's." So here are the questions that we're going to answer.

    26:49-26:49

    You ready?

    26:49-26:50

    Drop these down.

    26:50-26:54

The first question Jesus answers is this, "Where should I worship?

    26:55-26:57

Where should I worship?" Look at verse 21, we'll find the answer.

    26:59-27:02

Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe." Okay, so which is it?

    27:02-27:04

Jerusalem, Mount Gerizim, where should we worship?

    27:04-27:15

Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father." So where should I worship?

    27:16-27:21

The answer is anywhere or everywhere, right?

    27:25-27:31

Jesus was saying it's not about the mountain, it's about the motives, and it's not about the address, it's about the attitude.

    27:32-27:37

And once upon a time when you wanted to worship, when you lived in Old Testament times, where did you go to worship?

    27:37-27:39

    There was a place, right?

    27:39-27:44

We went to Jerusalem and we went to the temple and that's where God's unique presence dwelt.

    27:44-27:45

    God lived in the temple.

    27:47-27:49

Okay, question church, where does God live now?

    27:51-27:51

    Where does God live?

    27:53-27:53

    Right.

    27:54-27:59

The Bible says that God's Holy Spirit dwells in you.

    28:00-28:03

The Bible says your body is a what?

    28:04-28:04

    Temple.

    28:04-28:05

    Isn't that neat?

    28:06-28:09

God lived in a temple in the Old Testament and things haven't changed.

    28:09-28:15

God still lives in the temple, but now the temple isn't a building of stone and brick and marble.

    28:15-28:17

Now the temple is your heart.

    28:19-28:27

Jesus said it's not about where you go to worship, it's about who you worship.

    28:30-28:32

So we can worship here at Marshall Middle School.

    28:34-28:38

We could go to your house after church, worship at your house.

    28:40-28:41

Any takers for that, by the way?

    28:42-28:44

Who wants to have us all over after?

    28:44-28:45

    Nobody?

    28:45-28:45

    Okay.

    28:46-28:50

We're going to the Miller's house, and we're going to keep worshiping after church, all right?

    28:52-28:53

    But you see, we can.

    28:53-28:54

    We can.

    28:56-29:01

Or we could go out into the middle of a field and worship.

    29:04-29:12

And I think we have a hard time letting go of this idea that worship is about the external features, and that's kind of what this woman was driving at.

    29:12-29:17

And somehow in 2013 we still hold on to some of these things, right?

    29:17-29:18

    These external features.

    29:19-29:22

Like when it comes to worship, let's talk about the externals.

    29:22-29:23

    What about instruments?

    29:26-29:27

    What about instruments?

    29:27-29:32

Which are the biblically appropriate instruments that we should use in worship?

    29:34-29:36

Some would say, "Well, just the organ, man." Right?

    29:36-29:37

    "Just the organ.

    29:37-29:47

Just the organ." Some churches believe that if you even have a drum set, this is like the altar of Baal up here, right?

    29:49-29:54

the organ or just the piano or acoustic guitar and piano.

    30:00-30:02

Some instruments, some churches use no instruments.

    30:04-30:06

I had a guy get on my case about that one time.

    30:06-30:13

He says, "The New Testament doesn't say to use instruments, so you shouldn't use instruments in the church." Focusing on externals.

    30:15-30:18

You know, is worship about stained glass and candles?

    30:18-30:19

    We don't have that here.

    30:23-30:30

There's worship about other externals like shirt, tie, and suit coat, right?

    30:31-30:33

    Shirt, tie, and suit coat.

    30:33-30:35

By the way, I've been chewed out for that one too.

    30:37-30:40

On a particular Sunday I was just wearing a shirt and tie but didn't have a suit coat.

    30:43-30:47

And I had a man tell me that that was unacceptable.

    30:49-30:51

Well Jesus here took the externals off the table.

    30:52-30:54

    It's not about the externals.

    30:56-30:57

    So where should I worship?

    30:57-30:58

    The answer is anywhere.

    30:58-31:00

    Secondly, who should I worship?

    31:01-31:02

    Look at verse 22.

    31:02-31:02

    Who should I worship?

    31:04-31:05

Look at what Jesus says about worship.

    31:07-31:11

He said, "You worship what you do not know.

    31:14-31:25

We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews." Let's pause there for a second.

    31:25-31:26

    Who should I worship?

    31:26-31:28

The answer is the God of Israel.

    31:29-31:31

That's who you should worship, the God of Israel.

    31:33-31:36

And you notice Jesus having a conversation about worship with this woman.

    31:36-31:40

You really can't have a conversation about worship without talking about salvation.

    31:43-31:50

You know in America we have a very politically correct and generic view of God, right?

    31:54-31:56

God bless America, that's not offensive is it?

    31:56-31:58

You don't offend anybody with that, right?

    31:58-31:59

    God bless America.

    32:01-32:03

Or if you sneeze, God bless you.

    32:09-32:15

But you can talk all about God and it's all comfortable until you mention Jesus.

    32:17-32:18

Then it starts to get uncomfortable.

    32:21-32:24

But you see, people are comfortable with this idea of this generic God.

    32:24-32:31

We're not really sure exactly what He's like, but He may or may not be up there and He may may not be involved in it.

    32:32-32:33

    People are okay with that.

    32:35-32:47

And Jesus said to this woman, "You're worshipping what you do not know." Because God is a person, and God gave us a book.

    32:48-32:50

That's why we talked about this last week.

    32:50-32:51

    God gave us a book.

    32:51-32:54

We don't have to sit and wonder, "What is God like?

    32:55-32:57

What is God like?" Bob, what do you think God's like?

    32:57-32:59

You know, Justin, what do you think God's like?

    32:59-33:01

We don't have to do that.

    33:01-33:06

God told us in His book exactly what He is like.

    33:08-33:12

And your thoughts about God apart from His Word are meaningless.

    33:13-33:14

    They just are.

    33:15-33:19

You're like, "Oh, I think God's like this." Well, it doesn't matter what you think about God.

    33:20-33:22

"Well, I think God's more like this." It doesn't matter.

    33:23-33:26

What matters is how has God revealed Himself in His Word?

    33:28-33:34

Jesus said, "You worship what you do not know." The God we worship is a person.

    33:34-33:37

He is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

    33:37-33:39

He is the God of Israel.

    33:39-33:41

    Listen, anti-Semites.

    33:42-33:45

Did you know the God of the universe became a Jewish man?

    33:45-33:46

    Did you know that?

    33:47-34:00

this whole notion of the church being anti-Semitic and the church replacing Israel and the sad history of anti-Semitism even in the church.

    34:02-34:02

    Pathetic.

    34:04-34:07

Because He is the God of Israel.

    34:08-34:12

Jesus said, do you see that last phrase in verse 22?

    34:13-34:24

"Salvation is from the Jews." Without sounding overly unpatriotic, we do not worship the God of America.

    34:25-34:29

We worship the God of Israel, if you believe the Bible.

    34:31-34:35

His name isn't Allah, His name isn't the Great Spirit, His name isn't the man upstairs.

    34:35-34:37

Please don't use that phrase around me.

    34:38-34:41

I won't say anything to you, but deep inside I'm crying when you say that.

    34:43-34:44

    The man upstairs.

    34:47-34:52

Well according to Jesus, there is no "anything goes" when it comes to worship, right?

    34:52-34:55

Anything goes, worship how you want, who you want, where you want.

    34:57-35:00

Where you want is fine, but who you want won't fly.

    35:02-35:08

It has to start with not knowing about God, but knowing God.

    35:13-35:30

Maybe there's some here that leave a worship service and sort of feel like, "I didn't really get anything out of that." Well, the first question you have to ask yourself is this, "Do you know God?" Not do you know about Him, not can you list some Bible facts.

    35:31-35:35

Have you come into a saving relationship with God through Jesus Christ?

    35:37-35:41

Have you received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?

    35:42-35:51

Do you believe that Jesus died on the cross, taking the full payment for your sin, and He rose from the dead so that you can have eternal life?

    35:51-35:52

    Do you believe that?

    35:53-35:54

    Have you been born again?

    35:56-35:59

Because if you haven't, you can't worship.

    36:03-36:04

You're just here for music time.

    36:06-36:14

And you leave going, "Well, those people sure seem fired up, but I didn't really, I guess I didn't really get into it." Well, maybe you don't know the Lord.

    36:15-36:16

That has to be step one.

    36:20-36:21

    with knowing God, salvation.

    36:25-36:27

Then finally, how should I worship?

    36:29-36:29

    How should I worship?

    36:29-36:31

    Here it is, verses 23-24.

    36:32-36:34

All of that was introduction for this.

    36:34-36:34

    Here it is.

    36:35-36:46

Jesus said, "But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

    36:46-36:50

For the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.

    36:53-37:06

God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in Spirit and truth." So like we do in just about everything, people tend to go to extremes.

    37:07-37:12

How many people here came from a church where worship was more about Spirit than it was about truth?

    37:12-37:13

Anybody come from a church like that?

    37:14-38:09

about spirit than truth? Nobody? Not surprised, because I grew up in this area. We'll get to that in a second. But in some churches, it's all about the spirit, it's all about the emotion, it's all about, you know, whether it's laser shows and fog machines and, you know, "Oh, let's -- I'm going to do a little interpretive dance for Jesus, okay? I just we're just gonna play this little song and there's really no words or anything, but I'm just gonna do this interpretive dance for Jesus, and that's worship. And no substance, just a sentimental outpouring of emotion. That's just worshiping in spirit. Now how many of us came from a background of worship that is more truth than spirit? Yeah, that's what I thought.

    38:11-38:23

More truth than spirit, or dare I say, no spirits. That's also defective worship.

    38:28-38:38

When we were kids, the church that we attended growing up, I guess you could say it was a more truth than spirit kind of church because it was always the hymns for a second and last verse, right?

    38:42-38:48

And the one Sunday in particular, we were muddling through some hymns.

    38:48-38:50

And muddling is a bit of an understatement.

    38:50-38:51

It was a lot worse than that.

    38:52-39:03

But the organ was kind of playing the songs and everybody was just kind of mouthing the words and trying to pronounce these hard words.

    39:03-39:07

It was just, it was so much worse than that.

    39:09-39:10

    I'll never forget it.

    39:10-39:15

The preacher actually stood up right in the middle of the hymn, and he said, "Stop.

    39:16-39:17

    Stop.

    39:17-39:18

    Stop playing.

    39:20-39:20

    Stop singing.

    39:21-39:23

I'm not going to let you ruin another one.

    39:26-39:30

Sit down." Everybody sat down and was kind of looking at each other, right?

    39:30-39:46

Everybody was just kind of like, "Okay." went right into the sermon. He's like, "Open your reader's digest or whatever, we're getting right to the sermon." Like, "Oh, that's a fail on two fronts." That's defective.

    39:47-40:29

Hymns filled with wonderful truth, but the problem is the truth raced by so quickly, there was often no time for it to sink down into our spirits, right? Like, "A mighty fortress is our God." How many people know that hymn? "A mighty fortress is our God." You want to sing it? "A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing. Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe. His craft and power are great and armed with cruel hate on earth is not his equal." Okay, like, what did you get out of that?

    40:31-40:32

Seriously, like, what was that about?

    40:35-40:35

    What's a bulwark?

    40:38-40:39

Does anybody know what a bulwark is?

    40:41-40:41

    What's a bulwark?

    40:44-40:45

    Okay, protective wall.

    40:45-40:47

    Okay, I didn't know that.

    40:47-40:49

Maybe that's why I didn't get into this hymn.

    40:49-40:50

    Okay, so that makes sense.

    40:52-41:02

Okay, but by the time I figure that out, I'm on like verse four already, and when you put it that way, there's beautiful truth here, right?

    41:02-41:03

God is our shield and our refuge.

    41:06-41:10

But the problem is when you get done singing a hymn like that, you just kind of step back and go, "You know what?

    41:13-41:14

    That was just so true.

    41:17-41:18

Just mighty fortress is our God.

    41:19-41:22

    That's just so very true.

    41:25-41:27

But there's no emotion behind it.

    41:28-41:36

Listen, my wife doesn't want to be told that I love her because it's time to say it again.

    41:37-41:37

    Right?

    41:39-41:42

Every night, 10 o'clock, I have a little alarm that goes off on my phone.

    41:48-41:53

"Aaron!" "This is the time of the day that I tell you that I love you." There, said it.

    41:55-41:58

And we laugh at that, but honestly that's what some people do when they come to church, isn't it?

    41:59-42:01

    "God, it's 10 o'clock on a Sunday morning.

    42:02-42:18

This is the time that I show up and tell you how much I love you, and I will see you next week." Well, if that wouldn't fire my wife up, I would suggest to you that it wouldn't fire up the Lord to hear worship like that.

    42:18-42:24

Isaiah 29, 13, God says, "These people honor Me with their lips, but," what?

    42:25-42:40

"Their hearts are far from Me." So church, true worship, true worship, Jesus said, is spirit and truth.

    42:42-42:50

True worship is spirit and truth, spirit with my whole heart, with everything that's in me, with my emotions.

    42:53-42:56

I have come to pour myself out before the Lord.

    42:58-43:03

That's spirit, but it's also according to God's truth.

    43:04-43:08

Our worship team is coming up to lead us in a time of worship.

    43:12-43:14

But I'd like to remind you that this isn't music time.

    43:20-43:25

This is the highest human experience.

    43:28-44:23

is expressing love to the most worthy of that affection. This is a time of adoration to the one who made you. This is a time of thankfulness to the one who saved you. This is expressing the joy over the one who is with you always. This is a rehearsal for heaven. This is a prelude for eternity. So I invite you to stand. And let's worship God in spirit and in truth.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read John 4:21-24

  1. What has been your past worship experience / understanding in the church? More spirit or more truth?

  2. Why is worship such a controversial subject? How would you answer someone who says, “It doesn’t really matter how you worship. You can worship doing anything.”

Breakout Questions:

  1. Rate yourself as a worshiper on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 = passionate, 1 = desert dry). Why would you give yourself this number? What can you do to be better prepared to worship with the congregation Sunday?

  2. Pray for one another.

Unapologetic Preaching

What kind of church is this?

Pillar #1
Proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology

  1. The Church has been entrusted by God with the job of UPHOLDING His truth.

  2. The Church has been entrusted by God with the job of PROCLAIMING His truth.

  3. Titus 2:15 - Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you.

Preaching with AUTHORITY demands...
  1. ... the CONTENT is from the BIBLE.
    What does the Bible say?

  2. ... the APPLICATION is APPARENT.
What does the Bible say to do?

  3. ... NO ONE is EXEMPT.
What does the Bible say that I need to do?

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Titus 2:15

  1. How do you know if a sermon is ”good”? What makes a sermon “bad”? What criteria do you use? What criteria would the Bible give us to discern whether the preacher “proclaimed the Word of the Lord”?

  2. Why do some churches/preachers get away from clear preaching of God’s Word?

Breakout Questions:

  1. How much actual authority do you allow the Bible to have in your life? Is there any area in your life in which you are rejecting a clear command from God?

  2. Pray for one another.

Uncompromising Purpose

  1. The church has a MISSION from the Lord.

  2. HBCPN Mission Statement: Glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) in the spirit of the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-40).

    What is a Disciple?
    • A disciple WORSHIPS Christ (John 4:23)
    • A disciple WALKS with Christ (Colossians 1:10)
    • A disciple WORKS for Christ (1 Corinthians 15:58)

  3. The church is DELIBERATE in fulfilling the mission.

  4. Acts 2:42-47

    How Do We Make Disciples?

  • 00:00-00:06

Throughout the month of September, we're going to be going through a series called Harvest DNA.

    00:07-00:09

Okay, pop quiz. What does DNA stand for?

    00:13-00:13

    Wow.

    00:17-00:20

    Deoxyribonucleic acid. Okay, that is...

    00:21-00:24

Yeah, I couldn't remember. I didn't write it down, so thank you for that.

    00:29-00:36

You think being a preacher is hard, it's not, because if I don't study something, I just like throw something like that out there and Jay Knauer helps me out, so.

    00:38-00:39

    Be on standby.

    00:40-00:48

But your DNA determines what kind of a person you are genetically, okay?

    00:48-00:55

Your hair color and your eye color and your skin color and how tall you are or how tall you're not.

    00:57-01:03

So basically the DNA contains all of the information that comprises your makeup.

    01:04-01:08

And this month we're going to be talking about harvest DNA.

    01:10-01:12

And really we're answering one question this month.

    01:13-01:16

And the question is this, what kind of church is this?

    01:18-01:26

Right, if you're visiting with us, that is probably the question that you have right in the forefront.

    01:27-01:28

What kind of church is this?

    01:31-01:32

    What is our mission?

    01:35-01:39

The title of today's message is Uncompromising Purpose.

    01:39-01:41

What is the mission of this church?

    01:41-01:42

That's all we're going after today.

    01:43-01:44

What kind of a church is this?

    01:44-01:45

    What's the mission?

    01:46-01:50

If you have an outline, I want you to jot this down, first of all.

    01:50-01:54

I'm gonna give you a list of some things that our mission is not, okay?

    01:56-02:00

Our mission is not, everybody say, these things are not this church's mission, say that.

    02:03-02:13

Okay, make sure you get that because I wouldn't want somebody to mistakenly think I'm advocating these things as the mission of our church.

    02:14-02:18

Our mission is not, jot this down, first of all, our mission is not politics.

    02:21-02:23

    Our mission is not politics.

    02:25-02:32

I know that there are a lot of Christians, there are a lot of churches that wanna throw their hat in the political arena.

    02:39-02:46

And please hear me, I think it is important for the church's voice to be heard.

    02:47-02:54

I think it is important for Washington to hear us stand up for the word of God.

    02:54-02:55

I believe all those things are important.

    02:56-02:57

So don't mishear what I'm saying.

    02:58-02:59

Here's what I'm warning against though.

    03:01-03:04

I think some Christians really believe that we can legislate righteousness.

    03:05-03:06

Do you know what I mean by that?

    03:06-03:11

I think there are some Christians and some churches that believe this.

    03:11-03:14

    Well, abortion is wrong.

    03:15-03:26

So if we can lobby and pass laws that make abortion illegal, We can turn the tide of morality in this nation.

    03:30-03:32

But let me ask you, let's just be realistic here.

    03:32-03:34

If abortion were illegal, would that stop it?

    03:36-03:36

    Would it?

    03:38-03:43

You can't legislate righteousness because we're talking about heart issues.

    03:44-03:47

You can't pass a law that changes a person's heart.

    03:49-03:51

How about another hot topic, homosexual marriage?

    03:52-04:14

There are a lot of Christians standing up saying, you know, we can't pass that as law and outraged that some states are and I'm certainly not advocating, but I am saying this, if homosexual marriage became illegal, would that stop homosexual relationships?

    04:15-04:15

    Would it?

    04:16-04:17

    The answer is no.

    04:18-04:20

So yes, church, we should stand up.

    04:20-04:26

Yes, we should let our voice be heard, but please, I would caution you, don't think that we're going to legislate righteousness.

    04:27-04:39

If we can get Washington to be convinced that our moral viewpoint is correct, they'll pass laws and everybody's hearts in this country will be turned back to the Lord and we'll be back in the days of Benjamin Franklin.

    04:39-04:40

    It's not gonna happen.

    04:42-04:43

    Laws don't change this.

    04:43-04:45

    Jesus Christ changes this.

    04:46-04:47

    That's what our country needs.

    04:50-04:58

That's why you hardly ever hear me speak on politics, because Jesus didn't talk about politics, right?

    04:59-05:15

There's only one statement in the Bible that I see from Jesus concerning a stand on government, and that is, "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and render unto God what is God's." I don't see Jesus making any other kind of political platform other than that one.

    05:15-05:17

So the mission of the church is not politics.

    05:19-05:21

Secondly, the mission of the church is not social programs.

    05:23-05:25

The mission of the church is not social programs.

    05:25-05:32

Some churches believe that they are fulfilling the gospel, they are fulfilling the great commission by reaching out to the poor.

    05:32-05:38

Now I'm all for helping the poor, and actually this church right now is working on some outreach things, aren't we?

    05:38-05:40

I just talked with the Katie's about this this morning.

    05:41-05:42

We're working on doing some outreach things.

    05:43-05:50

We want to reach out to the poor and to the needy and to share the gospel with them and to help meet needs in our community.

    05:50-05:54

And we're working on some international missions work as well.

    05:58-06:05

I believe that is vitally important for the church to be doing it, but that is not the mission of the church.

    06:08-06:09

    Important but not the mission.

    06:11-06:22

Thirdly, the church's mission, we are not a club. We are not a club. You know, we enjoy eating together and playing games together, and you should. We enjoy that.

    06:27-06:39

We should enjoy being with each other and having fun together, and right, like last night, hanging out with the Masterinos. That was a blast, just sitting down and just chatting and visiting, and we should enjoy that, but That's not the mission of the church.

    06:44-06:45

    Important but not the mission.

    06:45-06:48

Okay, the church's mission is not entertainment.

    06:50-06:53

I promise you there's nobody in this room that likes to have fun more than me.

    06:54-06:58

And if you would like to challenge me on that position, talk to me after service.

    06:59-07:01

Nobody likes to have fun more than me.

    07:03-07:05

But I am not in the business to entertain you.

    07:07-07:10

It is not the church's job to entertain you.

    07:13-07:18

And then finally, the church's mission is not criticism.

    07:23-07:27

I'm not standing up here to criticize any other church or what any other church is doing.

    07:28-07:33

I have a lot of pastor friends in this area, and we have a group of pastors from this area that get together and we pray for each other.

    07:37-07:42

But I'm not criticizing any of those churches or what they're doing because my priority is this church.

    07:43-07:46

My priority is not the church down the road or on the other side of town.

    07:48-07:50

What they're doing, that's between them and God.

    07:51-07:52

    My priority is this church.

    07:52-07:55

My priority is to you, okay?

    07:56-08:00

So my mission is not to just stand up and just point fingers.

    08:00-08:04

this church is dropping the ball here, and this church is missing the mark here, whatever.

    08:05-08:08

All I care about is this church, what we're doing.

    08:10-08:11

    Okay?

    08:11-08:16

So those things, while some of them are very important, they are not the mission of the church.

    08:16-08:17

    So jot this down.

    08:17-08:22

Number one, the church has a mission from the Lord.

    08:23-08:25

    We have to start here.

    08:26-08:31

It's going to be a good reminder for us, but the church has a mission from the Lord.

    08:34-08:37

This is an awesome thing about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

    08:37-08:38

    What does he do?

    08:38-08:42

He calls us and then he sends us, right?

    08:42-08:44

He calls us and then he sends us.

    08:45-08:47

He calls us out of the grave.

    08:47-08:49

The Bible says that by nature, we are dead.

    08:50-08:52

We are dead in our sins.

    08:53-08:57

And we hear the message of the gospel that Jesus Christ died on the cross.

    08:57-09:01

God was punishing Jesus for all of the wrong things that I've done.

    09:04-09:06

God's not going to punish me for my sin.

    09:08-09:10

Because he put all of that punishment on his son.

    09:13-09:21

Jesus took the full payment of my sin on himself, and if you've received Jesus Christ, he's taken your sin upon himself.

    09:21-09:26

The Bible says he actually became sin on the cross and God poured out his wrath.

    09:28-09:30

So that we could be pronounced not guilty.

    09:31-09:34

So that we could receive His righteousness.

    09:34-09:37

And the Bible says that Jesus rose from the dead.

    09:40-09:42

And that is to promise that we will have eternal life.

    09:43-09:46

Not like eventually someday in heaven we'll have eternal life.

    09:46-09:49

The Bible says eternal life is something we have now.

    09:49-09:52

When you receive Jesus Christ, He gives you His life now.

    09:53-09:54

    That's the gospel.

    09:56-10:02

So he calls us, but then he sends us.

    10:05-10:06

    Need some proof?

    10:06-10:10

Just look at the last few sentences in every one of the gospels.

    10:11-10:12

I'll read them to you quickly.

    10:12-10:27

Matthew 28, 19 through 20 says, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I've commanded you." That's how Matthew ends. How does Mark end?

    10:28-11:15

And he said to them, "Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation." How does Luke end? "Thus it is written that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations beginning from Jerusalem. Even in John's gospel, we get to John 20, 21. Jesus said, "As the Father has sent me, even so I'm sending you." Do you see a theme? He calls us and then he sends us. You notice that Jesus didn't end his earthly ministry with a "see you later." He died, he rose from the dead, he appears to his disciples and was Like, we're done, see you in heaven.

    11:16-11:20

The gospels don't end with the end.

    11:23-11:28

Every gospel account very clearly says that he left us with a command.

    11:29-11:35

Make disciples, proclaim the gospel, preach repentance and forgiveness of sins.

    11:38-11:41

Be sent out as the Father sent him.

    11:44-11:56

I love it because when we planted this church, I didn't have to get this group of people together to say, you know, Fredericks, what do you, you guys weren't the Fredericks at the time, you were like Frederick and Kaler, but I wasn't like Ken and Amanda.

    11:57-11:58

What do you think this church should be about?

    11:59-12:02

We had this brainstorm, let's get some other people and what do you think we should do?

    12:02-12:03

What do you think we should do as a church?

    12:04-12:05

Like what should we be working on?

    12:05-12:07

We didn't have that meeting, did we?

    12:08-12:10

Because it's clear what we're supposed to be doing, right?

    12:13-12:15

We didn't wonder what are we going after?

    12:18-12:19

    Really, it's one thing.

    12:20-12:22

The church has a mission from the Lord and this is it.

    12:23-12:23

    Make disciples.

    12:26-12:27

    That one thing.

    12:29-12:30

    It's that simple.

    12:33-12:38

It's hard work, but it's not complicated, right?

    12:40-12:47

Everything that Jesus calls the church to do can be summed up in one two-word sentence.

    12:47-12:48

    Make disciples.

    12:51-12:53

So guess what this church is about?

    12:53-12:54

    Somebody guess.

    12:56-12:57

    Make disciples, right?

    12:58-13:01

Like why do we have worship the way we have worship up here?

    13:01-13:01

    Do you know why?

    13:06-13:08

    Yes, because we're making disciples.

    13:08-13:29

part of it. Why do we preach from God's Word the way that we do? Because we're making disciples that way, right? Why do we have a church that consists of small groups? Why do we have small groups at this church? To make disciples.

    13:31-13:38

Mission statement of Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh North, right here.

    13:39-13:40

    This is our mission statement.

    13:41-13:44

This sign is usually in the lobby, but I got permission to bring it up on stage today.

    13:46-14:01

But our mission statement is this, "To glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission, In the spirit of the great commandment.

    14:05-14:07

That's the mission of this church.

    14:07-14:11

Glorify God by fulfilling the great commission, which is what?

    14:13-14:15

    Make disciples, right.

    14:16-14:18

But the rest of the mission statement is not up here.

    14:22-14:26

But the rest of the mission statement is this, in the spirit of the great commandment.

    14:27-14:28

    We believe that's important.

    14:29-14:30

    The great commandment is what?

    14:30-14:49

Matthew chapter 22, Jesus was asked, "What's the greatest commandment?" And he said, "It's loving God "with your heart, soul, mind, and strength." And Jesus said, "Oh, and the second one is like it, "loving your neighbor as yourself." Jesus said everything in the Old Testament hangs on just those two things, loving God and loving people.

    14:50-14:53

And the reason that is important to include that in our mission statement is this.

    14:54-14:57

We don't make disciples through force, right?

    14:58-15:00

We don't make disciples through force.

    15:02-15:15

You know, just go out this week and grab someone, tie them up, bring them here at gunpoint, and make sure that they're here to hear the message and make sure they agree with it.

    15:16-15:19

We're not here to make disciples by force.

    15:20-15:23

Also, church, we're not here to make disciples by gimmicks.

    15:26-15:30

You know, next week at church, we're going to stage this really cool pro wrestling match.

    15:30-15:35

So invite all of your wrestling loving buddies and then we'll kind of slip the gospel in at the end.

    15:36-15:37

    Bad idea.

    15:38-15:39

    We're not using gimmicks.

    15:42-15:43

    So like, what's our thing?

    15:44-15:44

    It's love.

    15:45-15:51

We want to be motivated by a love for God and a love for people.

    15:52-15:57

That's why we're doing this, because we love God and because we love people, okay?

    15:57-16:03

So our mission is to make disciples, to glorify God by fulfilling the great commission and the spirit of the great commandment.

    16:03-16:05

And you're like, well, I get a question.

    16:06-16:08

    What is a disciple?

    16:09-16:17

Because if you get on the web and look on a bunch of churches' websites, they're going to have a mission statement similar to this.

    16:18-16:21

But one of the questions you have to ask is, what is a disciple?

    16:23-16:27

And you'll see the definition of a disciple, you'll see a lot of definitions.

    16:27-16:33

Let me share with you how we define a disciple at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    16:34-16:39

You can go to any Harvest anywhere in the world, and this is how we define what is a disciple.

    16:40-16:43

We believe that a disciple of Jesus Christ does three things.

    16:44-16:47

Number one, a disciple worships Christ.

    16:48-16:58

Jesus said, "But the hour is coming and is now here." when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him.

    17:01-17:04

We believe a disciple worships Christ.

    17:05-17:07

That's why maybe you've seen our little Harvest logo.

    17:07-17:09

Do you know what this logo is?

    17:10-17:18

It's actually a flame inside of a book, and that is to represent spirit and truth, meaning this.

    17:18-17:23

We're making disciples, And Jesus said the Father is seeking people who do what?

    17:23-17:30

Worship Him, the flame representing Spirit, and the book representing the Bible, representing God's truth.

    17:31-17:36

So we have that symbol just to constantly put in front of ourselves, here's what we're looking for.

    17:37-17:44

Constantly striving to worship God in Spirit and in truth, because Jesus said that's what the Father is looking for.

    17:48-18:12

why in our discipleship at Harvest Bible Chapel, we encourage you to be a part of our Sunday morning High Impact Service. Recently I was at a pastor's meeting and one of the pastors asked this question to the other pastors. He said, "What do you do with people who just prefer to stay home and watch church online?" Because we We live in a day, honestly.

    18:14-18:23

Technology is a fantastic thing, but sometimes it causes us to be a little lazy.

    18:26-18:33

And he said at his church, they put their whole service online, so they have some people at their church that kind of wake up on Sunday morning.

    18:34-18:35

How many people woke up tired this morning?

    18:36-18:36

    Anybody?

    18:39-18:41

How many people wake up tired every morning?

    18:42-18:42

    Okay.

    18:44-18:50

So, I'm not gonna ask you to raise your hand now, but how many people were kind of tempted to not go to church today because you're just tired?

    18:50-18:51

    Don't raise your hand.

    18:51-18:53

That was probably some of us.

    18:55-18:56

    All right, that was me.

    18:57-18:59

I'm like, "Aaron, I'm just too tired.

    18:59-19:03

"I don't wanna go to church." And she's like, "You're preaching today." So here I am.

    19:07-19:23

But there are people that are just, "Well, I'll just watch it online, I'll just watch it online." And I shared with these pastors, "Well, what we do about that, first of all, we don't put the whole service online.

    19:24-19:35

You have to be here." But I tell people right up front, we encourage people when we make disciples, we say the first thing about a disciple is a disciple worships Jesus Christ.

    19:37-19:45

And we tell people up front, as I'm telling you, there is something special about God's people assembling together in one place for worship.

    19:45-19:47

    There's something special about that.

    19:49-19:51

You're like, can you give me a Bible reference on that?

    19:52-19:53

    Sure, I can.

    19:53-19:54

What's the biggest book of the Bible?

    19:56-19:57

What's the biggest book in the Bible?

    19:59-20:00

    Psalms, right?

    20:01-20:04

And I don't think it's an accident that God made sure it was right in the middle.

    20:05-20:11

Right at the very center of your Bible, the biggest book of the Bible, is a book about worshiping God.

    20:14-20:16

And that's what we're going after at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    20:17-20:21

A disciple of Jesus Christ worships Jesus Christ.

    20:23-20:25

I've had preachers tell me, "Well, you know what?

    20:25-21:28

"At our church, the music's great, "but it's to just get you ready for the sermon "because the sermon is the main event." wrong. Because guess what? Someday we're going to be in heaven, and I'm going to be in the unemployment line. Oh, it's gonna be so cool, like the Kellers and the Mastorinos and the Edwards, and they're all gonna be like having a heyday, and they're gonna be like, "Where's Preacher Boy?" Oh, he's in the unemployment line, because everybody in heaven knows the gospel of Jesus Christ, so he's kind of out of a job right now. But I'm not gonna complain because I'll be in heaven, right? But listen, the music isn't to prepare you for the sermon. My job as a preacher is to make you better worshipers. Worship is the main event.

    21:29-21:34

Jesus didn't say the Father was seeking preachers. He said he's seeking worshipers.

    21:36-21:41

I want to help you become better worshippers. That's why we dig into God's Word together.

    21:42-21:48

A disciple worships Christ. Secondly, a disciple walks with Christ. A disciple walks with Christ.

    21:49-22:22

Colossians 1 10 says, "To walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit, and every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God." A disciple walks with Christ. You see that word "walk" over and over and over again in Scripture to talk about your relationship with the Lord. Walking is intentional, and walking denotes progress, right? I was here and now I'm moving here. It denotes that we're growing over time in our relationship with the Lord.

    22:24-22:28

So a disciple walks with Christ, first of all, your personal walk.

    22:29-22:33

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we want to encourage you in your prayer life.

    22:34-22:42

We want to encourage you in your personal time in God's Word, your personal walk.

    22:45-22:50

But also at Harvest Bible Chapel, part of walking with Christ is being part of a small group.

    22:53-22:55

We are not meant to do life on our own.

    22:58-23:01

Harvest Bible Chapel is not a church with small groups.

    23:01-23:05

Harvest Bible Chapel is a church of small groups.

    23:07-23:15

We want everyone that calls this church their home to be involved in a small group because that's where discipleship happens.

    23:15-23:28

That's where you are pouring into someone and you're allowing people to pour into you and mutual ministry happens, and mutual prayer happens, and encouragement, and needs are met, and relationships happen.

    23:29-23:37

You know, I've been in pastoral ministry for a long time, and the number one thing that I hear from people is this, I just, I don't feel connected at that church.

    23:37-23:40

I just, you know, I went to that church for a while, but I didn't feel connected.

    23:41-23:43

Well, the question is, are you part of a small group?

    23:44-23:54

Because you won't feel connected if you come into church late and slip out early, and you don't know anybody here, and you're not with anybody through the week, you're not going to feel connected.

    23:55-23:57

You're not going to build relationships that way.

    23:57-23:59

We want everybody involved in a small group.

    24:01-24:05

That is the discipleship tool of Harvest Bible Chapel.

    24:06-24:09

So a disciple worships Christ, a disciple walks with Christ.

    24:11-24:13

Thirdly, a disciple works for Christ.

    24:14-24:25

First Corinthians 15, 58 says, "Therefore, my beloved brothers, Be steadfast, immovable, and look at this, always abounding in the work of the Lord.

    24:27-24:30

Knowing that in the Lord, your labor is not in vain.

    24:31-24:33

    A disciple works for Christ.

    24:35-24:49

That is shouldering weekly kingdom responsibility, we want you involved in what happens here on a Sunday morning, whether it's greeting people or setting things up or teaching the children or playing on the worship team.

    24:50-24:56

We want everyone involved in some aspect of what happens here on a Sunday morning.

    24:58-25:00

So the church has a mission from the Lord.

    25:02-25:11

Secondly, the church is deliberate in fulfilling the mission.

    25:12-25:15

I want you to turn in your Bibles to Acts 2.

    25:17-25:21

Acts 2, and we're going to start in verse 42.

    25:23-25:29

The church is deliberate in fulfilling the mission.

    25:32-25:39

We don't set this stuff up every week and hope that accidentally disciples are made somehow.

    25:40-25:43

We're going to see that the early church was very deliberate.

    25:43-25:46

In the Harvest Bible Chapel, we want to be very deliberate.

    25:49-25:49

    So is everyone there?

    25:50-25:52

Acts 2, starting in verse 42.

    25:53-25:58

I want you to underline the words in your Bible.

    25:58-26:01

When you see the church is doing something, I want you to underline.

    26:02-26:03

Like what did the early church do?

    26:03-26:05

    Underline those action words, okay?

    26:05-26:06

    Does anybody need a pencil?

    26:08-26:09

    All right.

    26:15-26:21

It says, "And they devoted themselves." Stop.

    26:25-26:25

    What did they do?

    26:27-26:28

First of all, they were devoted, right?

    26:29-26:30

    They were devoted.

    26:32-26:33

    Jesus wasn't their hobby.

    26:37-26:37

    They were devoted.

    26:39-26:41

They devoted themselves like to what?

    26:41-26:44

Well, look, first of all, to the apostles' teaching.

    26:46-26:49

In other words, the Bible, the Word of God.

    26:53-26:54

    They were devoted.

    26:54-26:56

They were devoted to the Word of God.

    26:56-27:01

It says, "And the fellowship." What is fellowship?

    27:04-27:09

I grew up with a particular denominational background that the word fellowship means potluck.

    27:13-27:15

When I was a kid, when we had potlucks, do you know what I'd do?

    27:16-27:18

I'd ask mom what she made.

    27:19-27:24

And that was all that I would eat because that's all that I knew was safe.

    27:30-27:37

I don't know, I just had these visions of like These people at home cooking and their cat is like sleeping in their crock pot.

    27:38-27:51

They're like, "Shoo, I need to put the casserole in there." I could have been wrong, but I wasn't gonna take the chance.

    27:53-27:55

    So what is the fellowship?

    27:55-27:56

We're gonna see more of that later.

    27:56-27:57

    It's actually all through Acts.

    27:58-28:00

    But here's what fellowship means.

    28:01-28:02

    We belong to each other.

    28:03-28:04

    That's what fellowship means.

    28:06-28:11

It means you have a need, let us help meet that need.

    28:12-28:16

It means I have a need, you help meet that need.

    28:17-28:19

Fellowship means we belong to each other.

    28:19-28:24

The Bible says that the church is the body of Christ and we are individually members of the body.

    28:25-28:32

We have a connectedness that's much deeper than we just happen to go to the same church.

    28:33-28:43

Then it says, "To the breaking of bread," that can be sharing meals together.

    28:43-28:46

I also believe that is having the Lord's Supper together.

    28:50-28:55

And the prayers, when they got together, they prayed together.

    29:00-29:09

It says, "An awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.

    29:10-30:03

They saw God at work." It says, "And all who believed were together," this is the fellowship piece, I believe this is further fleshing that out, "And all who believed were together and had all things in common, and they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes." Okay, so they got all together to worship, but they were also getting together in each other's houses. That sounds a lot like small groups, doesn't it? See, that's why small groups isn't a fad, if I can insert that. Some people think, "Oh, small groups is a fad. No, it's not. Small groups is biblical. That's what the church did.

    30:06-31:09

It goes on, it says, "They received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." We could do like half of a year's worth of sermons just on that text. But I just want you to see the broad strokes here. What was the early church about? And you see all the ingredients that the early church was committed to in making disciples. That's what we're going after at Harvest Bible Chapel. Sadly, as I was going through this passage this week, I I had this thought. I thought, "Well, what if Luke was writing Acts today? And what if in the book of Acts today, Luke was recording what the church was actually doing? What would that say?" Well, here, I want you to look at the wall with me here.

    31:11-31:41

This is what Acts chapter 2 would say. Is my sign in the way? Is this blocking people? Better? This is what Acts chapter 2 would say today if Luke was writing it. It would say, "And they devoted themselves to the cute pep talks and the potlucks, to the secular music to be culturally relevant, and to the talking about prayers.

    31:43-31:51

And indifference came upon every soul, and many creative gimmicks were being done through the apostles.

    31:52-31:58

And all who believed were together, and occasionally felt badly for people in need.

    32:01-32:12

And they were hoarding their possessions and belongings and closed their ears to the needs of all as any had need, and occasionally, when absolutely nothing else was going on, attending the temple together.

    32:13-32:26

And hoping no events were asked to be held in their own homes, they received their food with ungrateful hearts, pretending to be praising God and having favor with all the people they preferred to be around.

    32:27-33:20

And the Lord added to their number occasionally those who were being bored." Does that sound like the church today? I think in a lot of churches, sadly, I think that's spot-on. Why? God help us. He gave us one thing to do, church. He gave us one mission. And when you look at the landscape of the church, especially in this culture, oh God help us, we can't seem to get to it. We can't seem to find time to be getting to the one thing that Jesus told the church to do, and that is to make disciples.

    33:21-33:26

So, at Harvest Bible Chapel, we are going for staying on mission.

    33:28-33:29

    We are going for authenticity.

    33:33-33:36

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we want to be deliberate.

    33:40-33:41

    We want to be passionate.

    33:46-33:47

And we want to be real.

    33:50-33:51

    We want to be real.

    33:51-33:53

You've heard me say this if you've been here before.

    33:53-33:56

How many times have I said, "We don't want to play church.

    33:58-33:59

"We don't want to play church.

    34:01-34:02

"We want to be the church.

    34:03-34:19

"We want to be authentic." We want to be people who live by and are controlled by the lavish love of Jesus Christ.

    34:22-34:23

    We want to be real.

    34:29-34:55

So this morning I'd like to tell you that, you know, you wouldn't be surprised if you went to McDonald's and you saw everyone working at that restaurant in order to fulfill one mission and that is to serve bad food. Because that's their mission, right?

    34:56-35:14

That's their mission. Nobody gets surprised when they go to McDonald's and they're like, "What are you guys doing here?" They're like, "We're making hamburgers." You're, "What? That's what we do." What does their sign say for like like 45 trillion served or something, right?

    35:14-35:16

And that's like with one cow.

    35:18-35:19

    (congregation laughing)

    35:20-35:21

    But that's their mission.

    35:21-35:22

    You're not shocked by that.

    35:22-35:25

You don't walk into McDonald's just in constant shock and awe.

    35:28-35:29

    Wow, really?

    35:32-35:51

Well, you don't walk into a bowling alley and see everyone who works at the bowling alley serving a purpose of allowing people to have fun by knocking pins down with a ball, because that's their mission.

    35:53-35:56

You don't walk into a bowling alley and say, hey, can we play basketball?

    35:57-36:03

Granted, your balls are a little heavy for that, but I'm not really into this rolling the ball down the wooden floor thing.

    36:04-36:05

    Can we do something else?

    36:05-36:08

They would be like, this is what we do.

    36:09-36:10

    We're a bowling alley.

    36:12-36:14

This is what we were built for.

    36:14-36:17

This is what our people are passionate for.

    36:20-36:22

Do you want the ugly shoes or not?

    36:27-36:28

    Right, you wouldn't be surprised.

    36:30-36:44

Well, I'm saying to you this morning, church, don't be surprised to walk in here and hear us say that we want you to be involved in being a disciple and making disciples.

    36:45-36:53

Don't be surprised if we say we want you to make being here and worshiping passionately a priority.

    36:55-37:02

Don't be surprised when we say we want everybody in this room plugged into a small group.

    37:06-37:12

Don't be surprised when we say, come and be a part of what we do Sunday morning, shouldering the weekly kingdom responsibility.

    37:13-37:18

Don't be shocked by that, because that's who we are, and that's what we do.

    37:21-37:23

We are so glad that you are here.

    37:24-37:26

We are so glad that you are here.

    37:29-37:37

And we wanna see each and every one of you grow in Jesus Christ.

    37:41-37:46

Because of that, we are going to be unashamed about asking you to be involved, true or false.

    37:46-37:47

    We're unashamed.

    37:48-37:49

    You're here, fantastic, we're glad.

    37:50-37:52

Let's grow in the Lord together and let's get on it.

    37:52-37:54

He gave us one thing to do.

    37:54-37:55

    What are we waiting for?

    37:56-37:56

    Let's do it.

    37:59-38:00

So how do we make disciples?

    38:00-38:02

    We're gonna close with this.

    38:03-38:04

    How do we make disciples?

    38:06-38:08

I want you to look here at this graphic.

    38:08-38:10

    This is the ministry funnel.

    38:12-38:23

And this little diagram just basically shows the how and why what we do on Sunday morning for making disciples.

    38:23-38:28

But when people come to Harvest Bible Chapel, first of all, we have a high-impact worship service.

    38:31-38:40

And from that service, we invite people to party with the pastor, where they can get to know a little bit more about this church, who we are, what we're doing.

    38:40-38:46

And from party with the pastor, we invite people to a two-week membership class called Making Harvest My Home.

    38:47-38:49

And in that class, we share the gospel of Christ.

    38:49-38:53

We talk about what it means to worship, walk, and work.

    38:54-38:55

    We cover all those things.

    38:56-39:00

And then after that, if you wish to be a member of our church, we sit down and talk to you.

    39:00-39:01

    We wanna hear your testimony.

    39:01-39:06

We wanna hear how you came to Christ and the difference that Jesus Christ has made in your life.

    39:09-39:11

And see if you have any questions about the church.

    39:11-39:12

    But that's all worship.

    39:12-39:18

And then after the membership class, we wanna really get you plugged into two things.

    39:18-39:22

First of all, you see where it says walk, we wanna get you involved in a small group.

    39:24-39:40

Meeting some night of the week in somebody's home, getting in God's word, praying together, digging deep, and also to work, getting you involved in some aspect of what happens here on a Sunday morning.

    39:42-39:48

But that flow is to sort of show you just this simple thing.

    39:48-39:50

We're being deliberate about what we're doing here.

    39:52-39:56

As I close, I'm gonna share a story with you in a second.

    39:59-40:03

But before I do, I want to tell you that we want you to make Harvest Bible Chapel your home.

    40:05-40:06

    We're not shy about that.

    40:07-40:14

If you're seeking a church home, we want you to make Harvest Bible Chapel your home.

    40:15-40:24

We want Harvest Bible Chapel to be a place where you worship Jesus Christ with a group of passionate worshipers.

    40:26-40:34

We want Harvest Bible Chapel to be the place where you are growing in your walk with Christ individually and with a small group.

    40:37-40:47

And we want Harvest Bible Chapel to be the place where you actively work for Christ, serving Him in some kind of a ministry.

    40:52-41:43

mission that Jesus left the church, and that's to make disciples. As we close, I want to share a story with you. I never, I don't think in this church I've ever shared like a canned illustration or a story that I read somewhere. I don't think I ever have, but this particular story I'm going to share with you, I was at a church one time and I saw this actually on the wall of the church out in the lobby and I did some digging around online to see if I could find it and I did because the story really impacted me. And as I was thinking through who we are as a church and where we're going, I trust that you listen and and let it impact you as well.

    41:46-41:47

    The story goes like this.

    41:49-41:58

On a dangerous seacoast where shipwrecks often occur, there was once a crude little life-saving station.

    41:59-42:16

The building was just a hut, and there was only one boat, but the few devoted members kept a constant watch over the sea, and with no thought for themselves, went out day and night tirelessly searching for the lost.

    42:19-42:34

Some of those who were saved and various others in the surrounding area wanted to become associated with the station and give of their time and money and efforts for the support of its work.

    42:36-42:38

New boats were bought and new crews trained.

    42:41-42:43

    The little life-saving station grew.

    42:47-42:53

Some members of the life-saving station were unhappy that the building was so crude and poorly equipped.

    42:54-42:59

They felt that a more comfortable place should be provided as the first refuge of those saved from the sea.

    43:00-43:05

So they replaced the emergency cots with beds and they put better furniture in the enlarged building.

    43:07-43:19

Now the life-saving station became a popular gathering place for its members and they decorated it beautifully and furnished it exquisitely because they used it as sort of a club.

    43:23-43:29

Fewer members were now interested in going to sea.

    43:29-43:33

Fewer members were now interested in going to sea on life-saving missions.

    43:36-43:39

So they hired lifeboat crews to do this work.

    43:41-43:47

The life-saving motif was still prevalent in the club's decorations.

    43:48-43:53

And there was a miniature lifeboat in the room where the club initiations were held.

    43:56-44:04

About this time, a large ship was wrecked off the coast and the hired crews brought in boatloads of cold, wet, and half-drowned people.

    44:05-44:09

They were dirty and sick, and some of them had black skin, and some of them had yellow skin.

    44:10-44:13

The beautiful new club was in chaos.

    44:14-44:23

So the property committee immediately had a shower house built outside the club where victims of the shipwreck could be cleaned up before coming inside.

    44:26-44:29

At the next meeting, there was a split in the club membership.

    44:31-44:40

Most of the members wanted to stop the club's lifesaving activities since they were unpleasant and a hindrance to normal social life of the club.

    44:42-44:51

Some members insisted upon lifesaving as their primary purpose and pointed out that they were still called a lifesaving station.

    44:54-45:10

But they were finally voted down and told that if they wanted to save the lives of all the various kinds of people who were shipwrecked in those waters, They could begin their own life-saving station down the coast, and they did.

    45:12-45:19

As the years went by, the new station experienced the same changes that had occurred in the old.

    45:20-45:27

It evolved into a club, and yet another life-saving station was founded.

    45:31-45:33

    History continued to repeat itself.

    45:35-45:44

And if you visit that sea coast today, you will find a number of exclusive clubs along the shore.

    45:47-45:52

Shipwrecks are frequent in those waters, but most of the people drown.

    45:57-46:08

God help us. We are in a lost and dying world, and Jesus gave us one thing to do as a church.

    46:10-46:13

Let's get on it. Let's pray.

    46:13-46:13

    Thanks.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Matthew 28:19-20, Matthew 22:37-40

  1. Why do you think churches get so sidetracked in politics/social work/entertainment instead of making disciples?

  2. How do you know when an authentic disciple is made?

Breakout Questions:

  1. What are you doing right now to obey Jesus’ command to make disciples? If the answer is “nothing, really”, what can you be doing to start serving Christ in ministry?

  2. Pray for one another.
