Open up your Bibles to the Gospel of Mark and chapter 6.

    00:07-00:09

We are going on tour with Jesus.

    00:11-00:14

Mark has been teaching us that Jesus is the Son of God.

    00:14-00:25

And that's the purpose for which the Gospels were written, so that we may know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and believing upon Him have eternal life in Him.

    00:26-00:28

    Mark 6. Verse 30.

    00:29-00:31

While you're turning there, I'm going to ask you a question.

    00:33-00:38

I'm going to give you a minute to think about it, and then we're going to give you the opportunity to respond by show of hands.

    00:39-00:39

    Okay?

    00:42-00:43

    Are you a needy person?

    00:44-00:47

    Are you a needy person?

    00:49-01:14

Okay, by show of hands, people today would say I am a needy person. There are a lot of definites there and there were a lot of definite no's and I saw Levi Keller was like on the fence there. Are you a needy person? Sometimes? Incorrect. Ryan Strube, are you Are you not a needy person?

    01:14-01:15

    Are you a needy person?

    01:18-01:19

    No? Incorrect.

    01:20-01:20

    You are.

    01:22-01:23

I know you're going to challenge me on that.

    01:23-01:24

    That's okay.

    01:25-01:26

    You are loved.

    01:28-01:28

    Did you eat today?

    01:30-01:34

Are you going to need to eat any time again for the rest of your life?

    01:36-01:37

    Okay, you're a needy person.

    01:37-01:41

Levi, did you eat any sleep last night?

    01:42-01:45

Are you going to need to sleep again sometime before you die?

    01:46-01:47

    Ok, you're a needy person.

    01:48-01:48

    Alright?

    01:50-01:53

Recreation - have you done something fun in the past week, Levi?

    01:54-01:58

Are you probably going to need to do something fun sometime in the rest of your life before you die?

    01:59-02:01

It sounds like you're a really needy person.

    02:03-02:04

    Here's the point.

    02:04-02:07

    We're all needy people.

    02:08-02:09

    We're all needy people.

    02:10-02:11

Every single one of us are needy.

    02:12-02:13

    Not just Ryan and Levi.

    02:15-02:16

    We're all needy.

    02:18-02:28

Because the things that we need - think about this with me - the things that we need are things that we are constantly needing.

    02:30-02:30

    Right?

    02:32-02:34

Like the examples I just gave you.

    02:34-02:36

You are going to need to eat again.

    02:39-02:40

    you will die.

    02:41-02:44

You're going to need to drink, or you will die.

    02:44-02:47

You are going to need to rest, or you will die.

    02:50-02:56

You're like, "But I rested last week." You're going to need to rest this week.

    02:56-02:59

Your entire life is about needing things.

    02:59-03:02

    I need a nap.

    03:02-03:04

    I need recreation.

    03:04-03:05

    I need a friend.

    03:05-03:07

I need. Your whole life is about needing.

    03:10-03:12

Why are we so needy? Don't miss this.

    03:14-03:18

God created us to be needy.

    03:19-03:20

    Think about this.

    03:22-03:26

This idea of eating - whose idea was that?

    03:28-03:30

That was God's idea, wasn't it?

    03:32-03:34

Remember when God created Adam and Eve?

    03:36-03:38

One of the first things He said to them was what?

    03:38-03:39

    "Freely you may..." what?

    03:39-03:47

"...eat off of any tree except the one in the garden." God created us with this need to eat.

    03:48-03:49

Now why did He create us that way?

    03:51-03:56

Because there is only one self-sustaining person.

    03:58-03:59

    And that is God Himself.

    04:01-04:04

God created us with the need to sleep.

    04:05-04:06

Have you ever wondered why you have to sleep?

    04:07-04:09

That seems like such a waste of time, doesn't it?

    04:10-04:18

Wouldn't you get so much more done if you didn't need to spend eight hours laying there doing nothing?

    04:20-04:25

For some of you, that might be like 15 minutes or a half hour laying there doing nothing.

    04:25-04:31

But however much sleep you get, wouldn't you get so much more done you didn't need to sleep.

    04:34-04:39

So why did God create us with this need for rest?

    04:41-04:47

Because the Bible tells us that there is only One who never grows weary.

    04:48-04:50

There's only One who doesn't get tired.

    04:51-04:51

    And who is that?

    04:53-04:53

    That is God.

    04:55-05:04

Every time you go to bed, That is your daily reminder that He is God and you are not.

    05:06-05:07

    He is the tireless One.

    05:08-05:10

    I am the tired One.

    05:12-05:17

So God created us to be needy, but it even goes deeper than those things.

    05:17-05:27

He created us in order that we would find all of our hungers, all of our needs, everything that we could possibly need satisfied by Him.

    05:28-05:32

our deepest spiritual needs fulfilled by Him.

    05:33-05:34

    But here's the problem.

    05:36-05:40

Sin has convinced us to fill up on things that don't satisfy.

    05:42-05:49

And we all at times need called back to the place where we find our true provision, our true satisfaction in Jesus Christ.

    05:50-05:58

The title of this message is "Provision Jesus Supplies." I'm following your outline.

    05:58-06:00

What does Jesus provide for us?

    06:00-06:01

Or what does Jesus supply for us?

    06:01-06:02

Write this down first of all.

    06:03-06:05

Jesus provides rest for the weary.

    06:07-06:09

Jesus provides rest for the weary.

    06:11-06:16

If you were here last week, we talked about how Jesus sent out the twelve on their first internship.

    06:17-06:21

You're going to preach, and you're going to have authority over unclean spirits, and you're going to heal.

    06:25-06:28

We talked about seven marks Jesus' authentic ministry.

    06:28-06:29

    Do you remember them?

    06:29-06:34

Teamwork, authority, dependence, determination, boldness, glory, perseverance.

    06:34-06:50

And they went out and did their internship and verse 30 says, "The apostles returned to Jesus and told Him all that they had done and taught." Okay, so back to Jesus.

    06:50-06:52

    Back to report in.

    06:53-06:55

Look at what Jesus' response is.

    06:56-07:06

"And He said to them, 'Come away by yourselves to a desolate place.'" And what does your Bible say?

    07:07-07:10

Rest a while. Rest a while.

    07:12-07:27

"For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat." people sit down to eat dinner and the phone rings as soon as you sit down.

    07:27-07:28

    That ever happen to you?

    07:29-07:30

It happens to me a lot.

    07:31-07:33

That's why I try to call people around supper time.

    07:35-07:37

Like, "Yeah, that was when that happened, Pastor Jeff.

    07:37-07:39

That was you that called me." Yeah, that wasn't an accident.

    07:42-07:44

I'm trying to teach you the Bible here.

    07:46-07:53

Because you see, even Jesus' disciples, they couldn't even find time to sit back and have a meal together.

    07:55-07:57

Jesus said you need to rest for a while.

    07:57-08:07

It says, "And they went away in the boat to a desolate place by themselves." Jesus provides rest for the weary.

    08:07-08:10

Warning here about a danger in ministry.

    08:13-08:14

    You can burn yourself out.

    08:17-08:25

Pride and peer pressure make us think that we have to redline in ministry 24/7 just as the disciples were doing.

    08:28-08:29

It's pride and it's peer pressure.

    08:31-08:34

The person that's like, "I'm good, Pastor Jeff.

    08:34-08:36

I'm in no danger of burnout, man.

    08:36-08:37

    I'm going strong.

    08:38-08:40

I don't need to take a Sunday off.

    08:40-08:45

In fact, I wish every week had five Sundays because I would be there five Sundays.

    08:45-08:46

    I don't need a break.

    08:48-08:49

    That's pride.

    08:50-08:51

    Or peer pressure.

    08:53-09:04

I'm starting to feel a little burnt out, but around so many other people that are working so hard, I'm afraid to speak up and say that I'm feeling a little burnt out.

    09:05-09:07

And negative peer pressure that way.

    09:10-09:16

You do not have a gauge on you like your car has a gauge that tells you when you're running out of gas.

    09:17-09:19

    You don't have that.

    09:19-09:20

You don't have a little dial on your arm.

    09:21-09:30

Like, "I better take a rest here because I'm about to burn out." You go from serving very hard to being burned out.

    09:33-09:36

Many times quitting ministry, leaving the church.

    09:38-09:45

I've seen that happen so many times for 18 or 19 years, you see these people just serving Christ so faithful.

    09:45-09:48

They're there every Sunday morning and smile on their face.

    09:49-09:51

    You'd never imagine.

    09:52-09:54

Like, wow, these guys never get tired.

    09:56-09:58

And then one Sunday, they're like gone.

    09:59-10:03

And you're like on the phone, "Hey, where have you been?" I'm burnt out, man.

    10:04-10:10

I've been there every Sunday for the last seven years You've never gotten a break from burnout.

    10:12-10:15

You didn't look burnout last Sunday, but that's how it goes.

    10:17-10:22

So if you don't have a gauge on your arm, what are the signs of being burnout?

    10:22-10:24

I want you to jot these down.

    10:25-10:38

Because being part of a young church plant - a young, small church plant - our people who serve here so faithfully every week of being burnt out.

    10:41-10:42

    These are signs of burnout.

    10:42-10:43

I want you to write these down.

    10:45-10:46

    Signs of burnout.

    10:46-10:51

Number one, when you start disliking people in the church.

    10:54-11:01

When you start disliking people in the church, that's a sign that you're burning out.

    11:03-11:06

First Sunday at church, "These people are so nice!

    11:07-11:07

    These people are so nice.

    11:08-11:10

I was greeted by 15 people before I made it to my seat.

    11:10-11:11

    They're so nice.

    11:11-11:12

    These people are so nice.

    11:12-11:13

    These people are so nice.

    11:13-11:14

    And week two.

    11:14-11:15

    These people are so nice.

    11:16-11:18

And month three, these people are pretty nice.

    11:21-11:22

    Month six.

    11:23-11:24

These people are really on my nerves.

    11:26-11:32

Pastor Jeff, can we open up the door in the back so that I can sneak in so I can avoid certain people?

    11:33-11:36

Because I'm sick to death of...

    11:36-11:37

    That's a sign that you're burning out.

    11:39-11:41

You start looking at people with disdain.

    11:41-11:42

    You start disliking people.

    11:44-11:46

I don't know who he thinks he is.

    11:46-11:48

I don't know why she was wearing that.

    11:48-11:49

    I don't know.

    11:50-11:51

    That's a sign that you're burning out.

    11:53-11:53

    Okay?

    11:53-11:58

Here's another sign that you're burning out in a similar vein.

    11:58-11:59

    Critical spirit.

    12:00-12:02

    You have a critical spirit.

    12:04-12:08

and you come to church, "Oh, I love Harvest Bible Chapel's great commission.

    12:08-12:12

We're fulfilling the great commission in the spirit of the great commandment.

    12:12-12:13

    We're glorifying God.

    12:13-12:15

We're making disciples worship walk work.

    12:15-12:29

I get it, I get it, I get it, I get it." And, "Wow, this is the perfect church." And you know that you're starting to burn out when you start thinking less positive things about the church.

    12:30-12:33

And all you can think about is all the little negative things.

    12:34-12:36

    Our auditorium's too big.

    12:36-12:38

I don't like that the chairs are red.

    12:39-12:41

I don't like that Darren's guitar is red.

    12:41-12:43

    The screen is too small.

    12:45-12:47

And that's a sign that you're burning out.

    12:48-12:54

Instead of the joy and the fervency in serving the Lord, now it's just nitpicking every little thing.

    12:55-12:56

    Everything gets on your nerves.

    12:58-13:05

I don't like the decisions the leadership's making Day one, "Oh, I trust the leadership.

    13:05-13:13

It seems like the leaders here are really following Christ and really praying through making hard decisions." And then you question every decision that's made.

    13:13-13:15

    "I don't agree with that. I don't like that.

    13:15-13:16

I'm not on board with that.

    13:16-13:20

I'm going to make my opinion known." And critical spirit is a sign of burning out.

    13:22-13:26

Number three, another sign that you're burning out.

    13:26-13:32

Decisions are made by asking easiest way.

    13:34-13:37

Decisions are made by asking what's the easiest way?

    13:37-13:38

    That's a sign that you're burning out.

    13:39-13:43

Instead of, hey, let's get really creative.

    13:43-13:49

I've got some really creative ideas how we can love people and how we can include people and how we can get people involved.

    13:49-13:51

    I'm really excited about that.

    13:51-13:54

And when you start burning out, do you know what you start doing?

    13:54-13:55

    You start phoning it in.

    13:57-14:00

Like, hey, we're going to have a party with the pastor.

    14:00-14:04

The first one was like balloons and pizza, and it was fantastic.

    14:04-14:13

Like, "Hey, you're in charge of setting up a party for the pastor." It's like, "I'm just going to stop at Giant Eagle and get some Lunchables.

    14:15-14:16

How many Lunchables do we need?

    14:18-14:20

And we need you to pay.

    14:20-14:29

We need 30 Lunchables for a party with the pastor." Like, "What are you getting him to drink?" The school has a water fountain.

    14:32-14:36

That's not going to cut it. Give me a piece of paper.

    14:36-14:43

I'll draw a sign that says "Water Fountain This Way." Or they can drink out of the bathroom sink.

    14:44-14:47

Path of least resistance. Let's just do it the easy way.

    14:48-14:50

Can we just do it the easy way?

    14:51-14:54

It sounds like so much work to do stuff.

    14:56-14:58

Just do it the easy way.

    14:58-14:59

    You're burning out, man.

    15:02-15:07

Also in a similar vein, number four, church is a chore.

    15:08-15:10

    Church is a chore.

    15:12-15:14

Serving Jesus Christ should be a delight.

    15:17-15:24

But when serving Jesus Christ turns into obligation - listen, don't mishear me.

    15:24-15:31

There are times in our Christian walks that we have to do things maybe we don't necessarily feel like doing at that moment.

    15:31-15:32

    We've all been there, right?

    15:34-15:41

But when that becomes the norm instead of the exception, that's a sign of burnout.

    15:42-15:42

    Church is a chore.

    15:45-15:53

Instead of, "I'm so excited to come and worship Christ and to get into His Word and to pray and be with those incredible people Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh North.

    15:54-15:58

You look at going to church the same way you look at going to your job.

    15:59-16:00

    It's just a chore.

    16:01-16:02

    I have to be there.

    16:02-16:05

I have to. I have to. I have to.

    16:06-16:07

    Those are signs of burnout.

    16:09-16:10

    People get very discouraged.

    16:10-16:12

And as I said, they walk away from the church.

    16:12-16:15

They go from trying to do everything to doing nothing.

    16:16-16:18

And both of those are a bad plan.

    16:19-16:32

I want to speak very specifically here People that serve Jesus Christ at Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh, North, the last thing that we want for you, the last thing that I want for you, is to be burning out.

    16:34-16:38

Because you matter more to me than the work that you accomplish.

    16:39-16:44

Mike Gates, so faithful every week helping turn this school into a church.

    16:44-16:46

How many times have we had that conversation, Mike?

    16:46-16:47

I'm like, "Mike, are you doing okay?

    16:47-16:49

I don't want you burning out.

    16:49-16:50

    Mike, how's your family?

    16:50-16:58

How many times have we said, "You care more to me than the work that you do." It goes for everyone that serves here.

    17:00-17:04

So if you need a rest, you're like, "Man, I just need a couple weeks off.

    17:05-17:15

I just need some time to focus on my own walk with Christ because the work isn't flowing out of love and adoration and gratitude for Christ.

    17:15-17:19

It's coming out of this place of obligation." If you need to rest, we will make that happen.

    17:21-17:23

And there is absolutely no shame in that.

    17:24-17:25

    There's no shame.

    17:26-17:37

Because look, even the people that directly accomplished ministry with Jesus Christ Himself, what did Jesus do?

    17:38-17:39

He's like, "You need to rest.

    17:39-17:39

    You need a break.

    17:40-17:41

    You need a break.

    17:42-17:43

    Go rest." Ok?

    17:45-17:46

    Put yourself above the apostles.

    17:47-17:49

We all need a break at times.

    17:51-17:53

    Jesus provides rest.

    17:54-18:01

He considered that important for His disciples just as we consider that important for His disciples in this church.

    18:02-18:05

Secondly, Jesus provides compassion for the weak.

    18:05-18:06

He provides rest for the weary.

    18:07-18:08

He also provides compassion for the weak.

    18:08-18:09

    Look at verse 33.

    18:10-18:27

"Now many saw them going and recognized them, And they ran there on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them." So Jesus and the disciples crossed over in the boat, right?

    18:27-18:34

And there were people that saw them crossing over in the boat, and they're like, "We'll just run." I don't get that, I'll be honest with you.

    18:35-18:38

I don't run unless I'm being chased by something.

    18:38-18:51

And even then, I'm weighing out my options I was like, "Can I take this thing that's chasing me?" Because, look, I have nothing but the utmost respect for you people that run.

    18:53-18:55

    I just can't do it. I can't do it.

    18:56-18:57

    I can't do it.

    18:59-19:00

Well, these people could do it.

    19:01-19:04

They ran there on foot to get ahead.

    19:06-19:07

    Wow.

    19:08-19:10

They were in much better shape than me.

    19:11-19:23

Matthew 24 says, "When He went ashore, He saw a great crowd." Jesus was like, "Man, I thought we were going to get some rest, and here's all these stupid people bothering Me." No.

    19:24-19:25

    What does your Bible say?

    19:26-19:27

    It's so awesome.

    19:28-19:38

"He saw a great crowd, and He had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

    19:39-19:45

"He began to teach them many things." Jesus seeing the crowd.

    19:45-19:47

The Bible says He had compassion on them.

    19:48-19:49

    Why?

    19:50-19:52

Because they were like sheep without a shepherd.

    19:53-19:54

    So what does that mean?

    19:55-19:57

What is a sheep without a shepherd?

    19:58-19:59

    Go ahead, shout it out.

    20:00-20:02

Lost? I heard a couple people say lost.

    20:02-20:03

    True.

    20:03-20:05

What is a sheep without a shepherd?

    20:06-20:08

    How about in danger?

    20:09-20:10

    Dead, pathetic.

    20:12-20:13

    Sheep are really pathetic animals.

    20:14-20:15

    They just are.

    20:16-20:22

Name another animal that requires a person to make it their full-time job to babysit them.

    20:23-20:23

    Okay?

    20:24-20:26

What do you call the guy that watches the cows?

    20:27-20:29

There really isn't a guy that watches cows.

    20:29-20:31

What do you call the guy that has to watch the horses?

    20:31-20:33

We really don't have a guy that watches the horses.

    20:33-20:35

What do you call the guy that has to watch the sheep?

    20:35-20:36

    Oh, that's a shepherd.

    20:37-20:38

    Sheep are stupid.

    20:39-20:40

You know how stupid sheep are.

    20:40-20:41

    Do you know?

    20:42-20:48

Sheep are so dumb, they train dogs to take care of sheep.

    20:49-20:50

How stupid of an animal are you?

    20:52-20:54

If a dog is babysitting you!

    20:55-21:00

So the best word there is "pathetic." It's actually an Old Testament concept.

    21:00-21:05

You see that it's in Numbers, it's in 1 Kings, it's in Ezekiel.

    21:05-21:09

I like that phrase, like sheep without a shepherd.

    21:10-21:10

    Pathetic.

    21:11-21:11

    Lost.

    21:12-21:12

    Dead.

    21:14-21:15

    Sheep need everything.

    21:16-21:16

    They need fed.

    21:16-21:17

    They need protected.

    21:18-21:19

    They need cleaned.

    21:19-21:20

    They need...

    21:21-21:29

What I want you to see here is that we have a God who moves toward us with compassion.

    21:30-21:37

And even though you're a dumb sheep and I'm a dumb sheep, Even though we made our own mess because of our sin.

    21:38-21:40

Here's a word for somebody today.

    21:41-21:42

    God loves you.

    21:44-21:47

And in some people's ears, that phrase sounds so cliche.

    21:47-21:48

    God loves you.

    21:50-21:54

Maybe you feel as if it's an indifferent kind of love.

    21:54-21:56

Like, I guess He kind of has to.

    21:58-21:59

    God is love.

    22:00-22:03

What I want you to see is the kind of love that He has for you.

    22:05-22:09

The kind of love that He has for you is compassion.

    22:10-22:15

This is for somebody here who might feel like God's mad at me.

    22:15-22:23

I feel like if I went before God in prayer asking Him to straighten my life out, I feel like God's mad at me.

    22:25-22:27

God is moving towards you in compassion.

    22:28-22:29

    God loves you.

    22:31-22:35

He sees you as a sheep without a shepherd.

    22:37-22:42

And He's moving towards you in compassion because Jesus said that He is the Good Shepherd.

    22:44-22:50

Church, this is what needs to motivate us to be in the Word and to be in prayer.

    22:51-22:59

We talk about your spiritual disciplines, your personal walk with the Lord, your devotions, your quiet time, whatever you want to call it.

    23:00-23:02

I could guilt you into that every Sunday.

    23:03-23:09

"You didn't read your Bible? Shame on you." "How much Bible did you read this weekend?" "None, shame on you." I could try to guilt you.

    23:12-23:18

But there again, if you're reading your Bible just because it's a religious habit, is it really profiting you?

    23:19-23:22

I'll tell you what's going to motivate you to be in your Bible.

    23:23-23:24

Is to know that God loves you.

    23:27-23:31

This book is an expression of His love for you.

    23:31-23:34

This book tells you the compassion that He has for you.

    23:36-23:39

That's why when Jesus saw the people and had compassion, what did He do?

    23:41-23:46

The Bible doesn't say He had compassion for them, so He just gave them all hugs.

    23:46-23:48

Maybe He did give some hugs, I don't know.

    23:49-23:50

    Here's what I do know.

    23:50-23:54

His compassion moved Him to teach them.

    23:55-23:55

    Right?

    23:56-23:58

That's why God's Word is so important.

    24:00-24:01

    That should be your motivator.

    24:02-24:02

    Oh, and prayer?

    24:04-24:06

    Here's your motivator for prayer.

    24:06-24:11

The Bible says to cast all of your cares upon Him because He cares for you.

    24:11-24:13

    That's your motivator to prayer.

    24:15-24:18

I'm a little ashamed of myself that my prayer life hasn't been on track.

    24:19-24:29

It is getting on your knees to say, God, Your Word says that You move with compassion towards people who are lost like me.

    24:31-24:33

Jesus provides compassion for the weak.

    24:35-24:36

    That's pathetic sheep.

    24:37-24:41

Thirdly, He provides satisfaction for the hungry.

    24:43-24:45

This is really the main event of this passage.

    24:46-25:16

Did you know there are two miracles are listed in every gospel. Every gospel writer covers different things that Jesus said and did but there are two events that every gospel writer covered. Two miracles that every gospel writer said, "This miracle is so awesome, I've got to make sure that this is in my biography of Jesus." One is obviously like the resurrection, right? That's the big one. Here's the other Feeding the multitude.

    25:18-25:19

Jesus provides satisfaction for the hungry.

    25:19-25:20

    Look at verse 35.

    25:23-25:29

So you have the picture of Jesus, disciples in the boat, all these crazy marathon runners.

    25:29-25:30

    I'll beat them there.

    25:30-25:31

    He shows up.

    25:31-25:32

    He teaches them.

    25:32-25:41

Verse 35 says, "And when it grew late, His disciples came to Him and said, 'This is a desolate place, and the hour is now late.

    25:42-25:48

Send them away to go into the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.

    25:50-25:52

Who do you think was really hungry?

    25:53-25:57

Is there anybody here like me that thinks maybe the disciples were the hungry ones?

    25:58-25:59

You know why I think that?

    25:59-26:08

You're like, "Are you reading things into the Bible, Pastor Jeff?" No, actually, verse 31 says that they had no leisure even to eat.

    26:08-26:09

    Right? We already covered that.

    26:10-26:11

    I think it's very specific.

    26:13-26:14

I think that's why Mark included that.

    26:14-26:21

The disciples hadn't been eating and all these people came and Jesus fires up the sermons and is loving on people.

    26:22-26:25

I think the disciples were the hungry ones here.

    26:25-26:26

You know how it is, right?

    26:27-26:28

We do this all the time.

    26:29-26:31

When I'm hungry, what do I do?

    26:32-26:33

You're laughing. You know what I do.

    26:33-26:36

I say, "Aaron, are you hungry?" Right?

    26:37-26:38

    She does that to me.

    26:38-26:50

And I was like, "I'm thirsty, do you want a drink?" Because you guys know I'm mean and I'm a smart aleck, I say, "Why would I want a drink if you're the thirsty one?" But we always do that, right?

    26:50-26:52

I think that's what the disciples were doing here.

    26:53-27:05

Like, "Jesus, dinner time, it's getting kind of late, and these people are hungry." "You're hungry." And I also like this.

    27:06-27:11

"It's time to eat, and every man for himself." Jesus, send these people away.

    27:12-27:17

Tell them to go to these other villages, find a Wendy's, find an Arby's, whatever.

    27:17-27:19

Get these people out of here.

    27:19-27:20

    Every man for himself.

    27:22-27:25

As usual, Jesus says something completely shocking.

    27:26-27:32

Verse 37, "But He answered them, 'You give them something to eat.'" What?

    27:34-27:35

    I'm sorry.

    27:36-27:42

What was that?" He answered them, "You give them something to eat." How big was this crowd?

    27:44-27:46

We find out later, but I'm not going to spoil it for you.

    27:46-27:47

    It was big.

    27:48-28:02

And they said to him, "Shall we go and buy 200 denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?" 200 denarii was about eight months' wages.

    28:05-28:09

Here's the question, why did Jesus tell them to give them something to eat?

    28:11-28:13

    Let's reevaluate the roles here.

    28:14-28:16

God in the flesh - that would be you, Jesus.

    28:18-28:20

Not God in the flesh - that would be me.

    28:23-28:26

Which one of us is more qualified to feed these people?

    28:27-28:29

Jesus says you give them something to eat.

    28:30-28:32

    Why would He say that?

    28:33-28:34

    Whatever it is.

    28:35-28:39

We know Jesus said that because of the response that they made.

    28:40-28:41

    Notice their answer.

    28:41-28:44

Jesus says, "Feed them." And they get out the calculator.

    28:45-28:47

Should we get eight months' wages?

    28:48-28:52

If we had eight months' worth of wages, would we be able to buy enough food for these people?

    28:53-29:00

Here's what Jesus was pointing out by saying, "You give them something to eat." He was pointing out that they were looking for a human answer to a divine problem.

    29:01-29:02

    Right?

    29:03-29:06

You're looking for a human answer to a divine problem.

    29:06-29:11

You have this crowd of thousands and thousands and thousands of people, and Jesus is performing all these miracles.

    29:12-29:29

And He gives them authority, and they go out and do ministry, and they perform all these miracles, and they come back from doing this ministry, and here's another opportunity for God to showcase His awesomeness, and they're like, are we going to have enough money for that?

    29:31-29:32

In the little church we used to laugh.

    29:33-29:34

    Rest her soul.

    29:35-29:38

On our board was Mary Phillips.

    29:38-29:46

And she was a widow of one of the Phillips brothers who founded T.W. Phillips Gas.

    29:47-29:49

That family was in the gas business.

    29:52-29:55

And Mary has gone home to be with the Lord several years ago.

    29:56-29:57

We used to laugh in board meetings.

    29:58-30:00

    business items would come up.

    30:01-30:04

Like the junior high basketball team needs new jerseys.

    30:05-30:06

Mary would pull her checkbook out.

    30:07-30:21

She'd be like, "How much?" People would be like, "Not only that, but the worship team needs new mic stands." Mary would be like, "How much are the mic stands?" "Oh, you know what?

    30:21-30:59

Something else the church needs, we really need to bring somebody in to fix that door." "How much?" to laugh. Like Mary's got her checkbook out, so everybody speak up and let her know what you need. Here's the point. Sometimes you can't solve the problem by pulling your checkbook out. Sometimes you can't solve - not sometimes - you can never solve a divine problem with a human answer. That's what Jesus was pointing out to them. Verse 38, He said to them, "I How many loaves do you have?

    30:59-31:04

Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five.

    31:06-31:12

And two fish." We know from the other Gospels, this was like a little boy's lunch.

    31:13-31:19

Now when you hear loaves, you're like me, you think, "I'm not the world's greatest parent.

    31:19-31:19

    I am not.

    31:20-31:25

I am learning so much." Here's something I would never do.

    31:25-31:31

I would never send my kids out and pack in their lunch five loaves of bread and two fish.

    31:31-31:34

Like, what kid is going to eat five loaves of bread?

    31:35-31:40

Because when I read loaves, I was thinking, do they still make the Town Talk Big Loaf?

    31:40-31:41

Do they still make Town Talk?

    31:42-31:43

    Am I showing my age?

    31:44-31:44

Do they still make Town Talk?

    31:46-31:46

    They do?

    31:47-31:47

    Deb says they do.

    31:48-31:56

I just remember as a kid, when my parents would send me to the store, they were like, "Get the Town Talk Big Loaf." It was this enormous loaf of bread.

    31:57-31:59

Those weren't the kind of loaves that the Bible's talking about.

    32:00-32:01

These would have been like little biscuits.

    32:02-32:07

These little hard - it would have been enough for a little kid's lunch.

    32:07-32:13

They're like five little crackers and when it says "fish," it wasn't like a tuna.

    32:13-32:15

It was like a little sardine.

    32:16-32:18

That had to have looked awfully pathetic.

    32:18-32:29

You've got thousands of people and Jesus said, "See how much food we have." The disciples are like, "Okay, Jesus, here's what we got." Enough to feed a seven-year-old.

    32:32-32:39

Verse 39 says, "Then He commanded them all to sit down in groups on the green grass." He commanded them.

    32:39-32:51

This wasn't like, "If you'll please take a seat." They bring this tiny lunch, and Jesus says, "Everybody sit down." and sat down in groups by hundreds and by fifties.

    32:53-32:58

And taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven and said a blessing.

    33:00-33:04

And broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people.

    33:05-33:10

And He divided the two fish among them all.

    33:13-33:16

Jesus had His disciples passing out the food.

    33:16-33:18

And I think this was a humility reminder.

    33:21-33:28

You know, when you consider the magnitude of the ministry that they were just involved in, the disciples were out healing people.

    33:28-33:29

    I've never healed anyone.

    33:29-33:30

    I've never touched somebody.

    33:32-33:33

That's what they were just doing.

    33:33-33:35

    They were casting out demons.

    33:35-33:38

I, to my knowledge, don't think I've ever cast out a demon.

    33:41-33:45

But you know, sometimes when you have some success in ministry, and start to think that you're something.

    33:46-33:52

That's why I would add here parenthetically to our sermon, ministry really boils down to this.

    33:52-33:54

Just do what Jesus says knowing that you're in over your head.

    33:56-33:59

Do what Jesus says knowing that you're in over your head.

    33:59-34:03

The disciples were like, "We got this little lunch." And Jesus is like, "Alright, everybody sit down.

    34:03-34:10

We're going to pass it out." And the disciples were distributing what Jesus provided.

    34:12-34:13

    There's another lesson there.

    34:15-34:26

Verse 42 says, "And they all ate and were satisfied." Bible students, how many people went home hungry?

    34:26-34:32

Of these thousands and thousands of people that came from everywhere to this desolate place, how many people went home hungry?

    34:33-34:35

Hold up the sign. How many people?

    34:35-34:35

    Zero.

    34:37-34:37

    Zero.

    34:40-34:44

Jesus Christ wants to be the source of satisfaction in you.

    34:44-34:47

And this goes way beyond fish and crackers.

    34:48-34:52

Because the point of this miracle was so much deeper than a meal.

    34:54-34:56

You read about this in John 6.

    34:57-35:00

Jesus used this occasion to teach a lesson.

    35:01-35:02

    And the lesson was this.

    35:02-35:07

He says in John 6, He says it in verse 35, and He says it in verse 48.

    35:09-35:16

thousands of people this bread, and as their bellies are full, He says to them what?

    35:18-35:26

"I am the bread of life." Church, your soul is hungry.

    35:27-35:29

    Your very soul is hungry.

    35:29-35:36

And deep down, you know that there's more than this.

    35:38-35:39

There's more to what I see.

    35:39-35:41

There's more than what I experience.

    35:43-35:48

These miracles that Jesus performed were never a show.

    35:50-35:52

    They always pointed to something.

    35:54-36:00

Certainly, they pointed to the fact that Jesus is God in the flesh as we've been learning going through Mark.

    36:03-36:10

But you have to see that when Jesus performed a miracle, it was more than just showing His divinity Because He could have done a lot of different things to do that, right?

    36:12-36:18

These miracles all pointed to a spiritual reality that Jesus Christ is going to fulfill in about 15 minutes.

    36:19-36:20

Like, what do you mean by that?

    36:22-36:24

Think of some of the miracles that Jesus performed.

    36:25-36:33

When Jesus healed someone, not only did it prove He was God in the flesh, but it also looks forward to the day when there is no sickness.

    36:34-36:40

When Jesus was driving out demons, He was pointing to the day that's coming that there is going to be no evil.

    36:41-36:48

When Jesus resurrected people, He pointed to the day that there would be no more death.

    36:49-36:58

And Jesus feeding this multitude, this was to point to the day that is coming where there will be no more hunger.

    36:59-37:04

In all of these miracles, it points to this truth of the supremacy of Jesus Christ.

    37:05-37:11

The feeding this multitude points specifically to the truth that satisfaction is found only in Him.

    37:13-37:14

    Satisfaction for the hungry.

    37:16-37:19

This was more than a free meal.

    37:21-37:22

This was pointing to a reality.

    37:23-37:24

    I ate this morning.

    37:24-37:25

I'm going to be hungry by this afternoon.

    37:26-37:27

I'm actually a little hungry right now.

    37:28-37:30

That's how it is with all food.

    37:31-37:39

Jesus says He's the bread of life and you consume Him, He satisfies you at your very deepest level.

    37:41-37:43

He's the only One who can.

    37:44-37:49

Finally, Jesus provides perfectly for the workers.

    37:51-37:54

He provides perfectly for the workers.

    37:54-37:56

Look at verses 43 and 44.

    37:57-38:02

It says, "And they took up twelve baskets of broken pieces and of the fish.

    38:04-38:09

And those who ate the loaves were 5,000 men." Mark includes that fact at the end.

    38:09-38:11

Here's why I believe he did that.

    38:11-38:12

I believe that's the exclamation point.

    38:13-38:15

I don't think it was like a byline.

    38:16-38:19

Oh yeah, by the way, I forgot to mention, there were like 5,000 people.

    38:19-38:35

I think Mark, if he was here today telling the story, he'd go through all this not mentioning how many people, and then he'd close the sermon going, And get this, "There were 5,000 men! Isn't that awesome?" He puts that at the end as like his exclamation point.

    38:36-38:40

We also know that there are more than that, right?

    38:42-38:46

Because when you read the other Gospels, compare the accounts, there were about 5,000 men.

    38:46-38:54

I believe it's Matthew, includes the phrase "besides women and children." Let's do some math.

    38:55-38:57

I need your help here because I am not a math guy at all.

    38:58-38:58

    OK?

    38:59-39:00

    So there's 5,000 men.

    39:01-39:04

A lot of those men-- I think it's reasonable that they were single, right?

    39:04-39:05

    A lot of the men.

    39:05-39:08

But is it also reasonable that a lot of those men had wives?

    39:10-39:14

About how many women do you think there were in addition to the men?

    39:16-39:19

OK, is it reasonable to say there might have been like 5,000 women?

    39:19-39:21

Because there are probably some single women too, right?

    39:23-39:27

It just talks about the men, but the Bible says there are women and children, alright?

    39:27-39:28

So we're going to work on this!

    39:29-39:31

I would guess about an equal number of women, okay?

    39:32-39:34

And there were children there, the Bible says.

    39:35-39:39

Okay, you could say 5,000 children. I don't know. We're just guessing here.

    39:40-39:43

I know families have like 9 kids, 10 kids.

    39:43-39:45

What if there were like some of those present?

    39:45-39:51

Do you know it's reasonable that there were up to 20 or 25,000 people here?

    39:53-39:55

if you take into account all the women and children?

    39:57-39:57

    Incredible.

    39:59-40:08

And here we see with these two verses, another food provision, but what I want to focus on here as we close is how He provided, and the answer is perfectly.

    40:10-40:17

Because it says after 15,000 to 25,000 people, like how many is that?

    40:18-40:21

The console arena holds how many people?

    40:22-40:23

    18,000, thank you.

    40:24-40:26

    Yeah, console holds 18,000 people.

    40:26-40:30

So imagine - build the capacity.

    40:32-40:37

And Jesus fed that many people with one little boy's lunch.

    40:39-40:40

    That's incredible.

    40:41-40:42

But I want to show you something else incredible.

    40:42-40:49

Imagine the cleaning crew comes through console they pick up the leftover pieces.

    40:51-40:53

And how much was left over?

    40:53-40:54

    What does your Bible say?

    40:55-40:56

    How much was left over?

    40:59-41:00

    Twelve baskets.

    41:01-41:06

Now, if you look up the word "basket" in the Greek, it actually literally means a little basket.

    41:07-41:09

    It's a diminutive word.

    41:09-41:10

It means twelve little baskets were picked up.

    41:12-41:15

It wasn't like a clothes basket, okay?

    41:15-41:20

These little baskets were actually - would use them to carry their lunch in.

    41:20-41:21

    They were like lunch boxes.

    41:24-41:32

Your Bible says that all these people ate, and when they cleaned up, they had 12 lunch boxes full left.

    41:33-41:37

And how many disciples were there again?

    41:38-41:40

Who didn't have time to eat?

    41:41-41:42

    Who were serving other people?

    41:43-41:45

Not eating themselves, serving other people?

    41:46-41:47

    Jesus, when's it my turn?

    41:47-41:49

Jesus, when do I get to eat?

    41:49-42:01

I'm serving thousands and thousands and thousands and when am I going to be able to?" And they clean up and there sits twelve lunch boxes.

    42:03-42:05

Those of you who - I want to speak again.

    42:06-42:12

I thought about you so much this week and some of the people that have been so faithful every week in serving in this church plant.

    42:13-42:14

There are some people - you know what?

    42:15-42:16

    I've been serving in ministry.

    42:17-42:18

    You know what, Pastor Jeff?

    42:18-42:22

I give and I give and I give, and it seems like I'm always giving.

    42:23-42:35

Who's going to take care of my needs?" You see in this passage that Jesus had His disciples take care of others first, only to find out that they'd been provided for too.

    42:38-42:50

In the same way, you can come to church, Or if this isn't your home church, you can go to Harvest Naperville or wherever I just threw that one out randomly.

    42:53-43:07

You can go to church to be served, and you can go home-filled, or you can go be involved in serving only to find out that God had your needs in mind and provided for them too.

    43:09-43:11

that people at this church have sacrificed.

    43:14-43:26

You've given so much money and time and energy and effort and burning the midnight oil, working late and working hard and giving and giving.

    43:28-43:34

Those of you that have done that, let me ask you, have you found that God has neglected to take care of you?

    43:36-43:40

Let me ask you, have you sacrificed Have you found anything that you have regretted?

    43:42-43:48

Have you found that you have been so busy serving others that God has not been meeting your own needs?

    43:52-43:55

The Lord sure taught us this lesson so many times.

    43:55-44:00

I could keep you here until football season giving you illustrations.

    44:02-44:03

I do want to share the one.

    44:03-44:08

This was just a quick one, It's a very good reminder for me.

    44:09-44:17

There was a time - our children are 15 months apart, and there was a day way back when when they were both in diapers.

    44:20-44:28

We were out of diapers and involved in ministry.

    44:30-44:33

I remember Aaron saying, "I don't have any choice.

    44:34-44:56

charge diapers. And I'm not like one of those like, dictates what Aaron can and can't spend, monitoring every penny. I'm not, I'm, you know, she's very wise and she's a good steward. She's very thrifty. For some reason, I don't know why, it must have been of the Lord. She's like, I'm going to, I'm just going to have to charge some diapers. I said, don't.

    44:57-45:02

Don't charge diapers. And she's like, we got two babies and we have no diapers and you're telling me and not to charge them.

    45:04-45:06

At the time that I said that, I don't know why I said that.

    45:07-45:10

But I do know that there was some frustration on my part because you know what?

    45:10-45:18

We gave and we gave and we gave and we gave and we were constantly trying to meet other people's needs.

    45:18-45:21

We were the people that were trying so hard to make sure other kids had diapers.

    45:23-45:25

Well, Aaron, understandably, was a little taken aback.

    45:26-45:26

    Don't charge your money.

    45:28-45:29

    Okay, what's your plan?

    45:29-45:30

    I didn't have one.

    45:32-45:47

But it was that same afternoon that we get a random call from an acquaintance who said, "I just bought all these diapers and they do not fit my kids." They bought them at a box store.

    45:47-45:50

It was like this pack of - they come in a pack of 12,000 diapers.

    45:51-45:55

He goes, "I bought them and opened them, and they just don't fit my kids.

    45:56-46:11

Could you use them?" of dozens of stories where God has taught us, when you're busy serving others, you don't need to keep your eyes on your own needs because God has His eyes on your needs.

    46:13-46:22

Just as 12 lunchboxes were picked up for these 12 faithful servants, God's going to make sure that your needs are provided as you serve Him.

    46:24-46:28

Let me ask you, are you a needy person?

    46:29-46:36

that people would say, "I'm a needy person." There are times that we need rest and Jesus provides it.

    46:36-46:40

We need to know that we are loved and we have a God who loves us.

    46:41-46:42

    We are people who hunger.

    46:42-46:46

We have a God who feeds us physically and spiritually.

    46:47-46:59

In this passage, we see that Jesus performed the largest scale miracle in history to prove that He has the power to satisfy hunger that you have.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):

  • 00:00-00:05

Turn in your Bibles to the Gospel according to Mark and chapter 6.

    00:06-00:09

Mark chapter 6 we're going to be picking up in verse 7.

    00:10-00:13

Why have we been going through the Gospel of Mark?

    00:13-00:23

Well Mark's purpose in writing, just like all of the Gospel writers, was to show us that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

    00:26-00:29

And that has implications for everyone.

    00:32-00:42

Mark has shown us in the person of Jesus Christ, in His power, and in His preaching, that Jesus Christ is indeed God in the flesh.

    00:45-00:52

We're going to see in this passage today that He is God in the flesh who commissioned the ministry of the message to His people.

    00:54-01:10

You can have a big ministry, and you can have a popular ministry, and you can have a much talked about ministry, but the question we're going to examine today, do you have an authentic ministry?

    01:12-01:14

Because at the end of the day, really that's all that matters.

    01:16-01:22

If you've been with us for any amount of time, I'm sure you've heard us talk about that and pray that, "Lord, we want to be authentic.

    01:22-01:23

We just want to be authentic.

    01:24-01:26

We want nothing more than to be authentic.

    01:28-01:29

    What does that even mean?

    01:31-01:33

We say things like we don't want to play church.

    01:33-01:36

We are seeking God to be the real thing.

    01:38-01:40

So you're like, well, authentic by whose standards?

    01:42-01:43

    Well, the answer, not mine.

    01:46-01:49

There's something that I say to myself often that I want you to learn to say to yourself.

    01:51-01:52

    And that's this.

    01:53-01:57

This is my church, but this is not my church.

    01:58-01:59

I'm going to break that down for you.

    02:00-02:04

When I say this is my church, what I mean is this is the place where I belong.

    02:06-02:07

This is the body that I am a part of.

    02:09-02:15

This is my church, but this is not my church, okay?

    02:16-02:21

This isn't the Jeff Miller show, because Jeff Miller could be dead this afternoon.

    02:22-02:24

what, like you're not going to show up next week?

    02:24-02:26

Like, well that was fun while it lasted.

    02:27-02:27

    No.

    02:29-02:30

    Authentic by whose standard?

    02:32-02:34

    Authentic by Jesus' standard.

    02:36-02:43

And in this passage in Mark we're going to look at this is how you should evaluate this church's ministry, okay?

    02:45-02:49

That's one of the things I love about Harvest Bible Chapel, it's constant evaluation.

    02:50-02:55

We just went through this, didn't we, in January and in February.

    02:55-02:56

    We just went through this.

    02:56-02:57

    What were we doing?

    02:58-02:59

    Evaluating, evaluating.

    02:59-03:00

    What are we doing right?

    03:00-03:04

What are we doing that maybe we could be doing better?

    03:05-03:07

What are some things we need to stop doing?

    03:07-03:09

What are some things we need to start doing?

    03:10-03:11

    Constant evaluation.

    03:13-03:16

But this is how you should evaluate this church's ministry.

    03:17-03:22

And personally, this is how you should evaluate your personal ministry.

    03:22-03:25

There are some people here that are parts of other ministries.

    03:25-03:28

This is how you should evaluate that ministry.

    03:29-03:35

If you're visiting with us today, this is how you should evaluate your church's ministry.

    03:37-03:39

    Whichever church you call home.

    03:41-03:43

So on your outline, do you have your outline ready?

    03:45-03:46

    Bob Mastrino does, everybody else?

    03:47-03:52

Seven marks of a Jesus authentic ministry.

    03:52-03:55

All in favor of a Jesus authentic ministry?

    03:56-03:57

    Okay, all opposed?

    03:57-03:59

    All right, moving on.

    04:00-04:03

Seven marks of a Jesus authentic ministry.

    04:05-04:14

The last couple of weeks we've seen people who have exercised great faith, and then last Last week we saw Jesus went back to his hometown and was rejected.

    04:16-04:21

Rejected to the degree that Jesus Christ was actually marveling at their unbelief.

    04:23-04:25

And it says he went about among the villages teaching.

    04:28-04:39

Verse 7 says, "And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two." First thing on your outline, first mark of a Jesus authentic ministry is teamwork.

    04:41-04:50

This is an extremely significant turning point in the ministry of Jesus because up to this point I'm sure you noticed it was all Jesus, right?

    04:51-05:02

Jesus was doing all of the teaching, all of the preaching, all of the miracles, all of the ministry at this point was happening through one person and that was Jesus Christ.

    05:05-05:12

Now it says, "He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two." Why in pairs?

    05:12-05:15

Well, I think that's pretty obvious, right?

    05:16-05:23

Support, protection, encouragement, companionship, positive peer pressure.

    05:24-05:26

I think we all get why they were sent out in pairs, right?

    05:27-05:28

    That's not like dazzling anyone.

    05:31-05:46

But I think it's important to stop just for a moment and consider that we live in a day where we have never been more connected or more disconnected at the same time.

    05:46-05:47

    True or false?

    05:49-05:59

We are connected to a degree today, unlike any other point in history, but we as a people People have never been more disconnected as a people.

    06:01-06:10

Whether it's Facebook or Twitter, Instagram, Google Circles, Pinterest, MySpace.

    06:10-06:11

    Is MySpace still a thing?

    06:12-06:12

    I don't know.

    06:13-06:14

    Is Facebook still a thing?

    06:15-06:17

You have 700 friends on Facebook.

    06:18-06:21

But how many of those friends have you actually spent time with in the last week?

    06:22-06:25

How many of those people have you actually spent time with in the last month?

    06:26-06:29

We've never been more connected and we've never been more disconnected.

    06:31-06:43

I love social media, having friends all over the world, friends from ministry and friends from missions and friends from Bible college and friends from high school and family.

    06:45-06:50

It can be a great thing, but I think it can be a very disconnecting thing.

    06:52-06:59

through social media have become so much easier and so much more manageable and less messy, right?

    07:01-07:05

Because our conversations have really been boiled down, haven't they?

    07:06-07:08

Our conversations have turned into this.

    07:10-07:26

I started a new job today and you're like, "Like?" I'm about to eat this sandwich that I took a picture of, and you're like, tell me, like.

    07:28-07:30

And some of them are awkward, you know?

    07:31-07:39

Like, I just found out that my great aunt fell down 117 steps, and she's on her way to the hospital.

    07:40-07:45

They think she's going to make it, and you're like, like?

    07:47-07:49

Like, what exactly are we liking about that?

    07:49-07:54

I hope the, I think she's gonna make it part, not she fell on the steps part.

    07:56-07:59

To be honest with you, it'd be easier if we just entered into real world conversations like that.

    07:59-08:00

    Wouldn't that be easier?

    08:01-08:03

Wouldn't that be just so much easier?

    08:04-08:06

You know, Randy Campbell walks in.

    08:07-08:11

He's like, man, the weather in Chicago sure is cold.

    08:11-08:14

And I just go, walk away.

    08:15-08:16

    Let's just leave it there.

    08:16-08:17

    That's all I'm used to.

    08:20-08:21

Relationships are easier and so is ministry.

    08:23-08:42

Let's be honest, it's easy to post the snippet of a sermon, or my favorite, the picture of Jesus, you know, blonde haired, blue eyed Jesus, that says, "If you're ashamed of Jesus, He'll be ashamed of you." So click "like" if you're not ashamed of Jesus.

    08:43-08:46

But if you'd prefer to go straight to hell, keep scrolling.

    08:47-08:48

    Love that.

    08:49-09:00

As if God in heaven is looking down, going, "I sure hope he clicks 'like'." Because this is the criteria in which I evaluate.

    09:02-09:38

I was at a pastor's meeting recently where one of the pastors asked - he goes, "I have a serious question." He goes, "What do you other pastors do about people that just prefer watch church online." And I said, "Well, that really isn't an issue for us at this point. You can listen online, but you can't really watch church online." But there are churches that have their whole worship service online, and one of the problems that these churches that are so technologically advanced and capable, one of the problems that they're facing is you have people that are just like, "It's Sunday morning. I'm tired. I'll just Just watch church online.

    09:40-09:41

    And that's good enough.

    09:42-09:53

And I certainly think there can be some value in that, but can you just agree with me that more and more we are drifting away from actually personal contact with people?

    09:55-10:01

The Bible says when Jesus sent out his apostles to do ministry, he sent them out two by two.

    10:02-10:02

    Teamwork.

    10:03-10:11

Jesus didn't say, "Set up a Facebook event page, Messiah's in town, see how many people you can get to like your page.

    10:11-10:15

Make sure you tweet at least four times a day.

    10:15-10:23

Make sure you're putting it on Twitter, take plenty of pictures to put on whatever the picture thingy is." What do you call that?

    10:24-10:24

    Instagram?

    10:25-10:26

    Thank you.

    10:26-10:28

You're not meant to do church on your own.

    10:30-10:35

Jesus Authentic Ministry calls you to do ministry with people.

    10:37-10:43

That's why so many times at Harvest Bible Chapel you hear us say, "We're just not shy about it." We want you involved in a small group.

    10:44-10:52

We want you actually going into people's homes and spending time in the Word with people and praying with people.

    10:53-10:55

    We want you doing that.

    10:56-11:00

We want you here serving with us on Sunday morning, teamwork.

    11:01-11:03

The first mark of a Jesus authentic ministry.

    11:03-11:05

Secondly, let's go on in the text.

    11:07-11:14

It says, "And gave them authority over the unclean spirits." Let's stop right there.

    11:14-11:18

Number two, a mark of a Jesus authentic ministry is authority.

    11:20-11:25

Obviously we're going to see in this passage the sign gifts, things like healing and demon evicting.

    11:26-11:30

Those sign gifts were to authenticate the gospel until the New Testament was written.

    11:32-11:34

Do I believe that God still does these things?

    11:34-11:35

    Absolutely.

    11:35-11:40

But there are not people that have healing power like Jesus and the apostles had healing power.

    11:41-11:42

    Okay?

    11:43-11:44

    Those people do not exist.

    11:46-11:49

And you're like, "Well, what about like Benny Hinn?" No.

    11:50-11:57

If somebody like that really had the power to heal like Jesus and the apostles, why aren't Why aren't they doing like a hospital tour?

    11:59-12:05

Why aren't they going to some third world country that's being wrecked by disease and laying hands on people?

    12:07-12:10

Can God heal? He absolutely can and He absolutely does.

    12:12-12:26

I could keep you here the rest of the month telling you stories of how I've seen God heal people, but I do not believe that there are people have this healing power like the apostles had, that was to authenticate their message.

    12:28-12:34

You're like, "Well, what are you talking about authority?" There is an authority that Jesus gave us, by the way, and the authority is in the message.

    12:34-12:37

I brought this reference down, Matthew 16, 19.

    12:37-12:56

Jesus said to Peter, "Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." You're like, "What does that mean?" Well, what that means literally is Jesus gave us the authority to declare the judgment of heaven based on the principles of God's word.

    12:57-12:57

    What does that mean?

    12:58-12:59

    Jesus gave us authority.

    13:01-13:35

I can say to someone, "If you receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, your sins are forgiven and he will give you the gift of eternal life." And somebody might say, "Well, what gives you the authority to say something like that?" The answer is, "Jesus gives me the authority to say something like that, because that's what His Word says, and that's the message of Heaven." I can also say, and do, that if you reject Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you have rejected the only means by which you can have eternal life.

    13:37-13:39

And hell is the only thing that you have to look forward to.

    13:40-13:41

Like, where do you get off saying that?

    13:41-13:43

Who gives you the authority to say something like that?

    13:44-13:47

God gives me the authority to say something like that because that's what His Word says.

    13:48-13:53

Okay, so a Jesus authentic ministry is a ministry of authority.

    13:54-13:56

What's the first pillar of Harvest Bible Chapel?

    13:57-13:58

    Pillar number one is what?

    13:59-14:03

Proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    14:05-14:07

That's why you'll never hear us up here sharing the Word of God.

    14:08-14:17

Like, "Well, I'm going to say some things, but I'm so sorry." Okay, and then Jesus said this, "I'm so sorry, I hope that didn't offend anyone here." We don't apologize for that.

    14:17-14:17

    God's not sorry.

    14:18-14:19

    Why should I be sorry?

    14:20-14:20

    Authority.

    14:21-14:22

    This is what God said.

    14:23-14:26

My job is to echo what God has said.

    14:26-14:31

That's the only authority that I have, is the authority given by Jesus Christ.

    14:31-14:49

Every sermon, every sermon you hear you must evaluate, "Is this what the Bible says?" You might leave here some Sunday thinking, "I don't know if I really agree with what he said." What you need to do, you've heard me say this, take your Bible, open it up, read the text, is that what the Bible says?

    14:49-14:53

If I'm saying something that the Bible doesn't say, then you need to come and talk to me.

    14:55-15:00

But if you're having a hard time because I said something that the Bible does say, then you need to talk to God about that.

    15:00-15:00

    Okay?

    15:01-15:01

    Authority.

    15:04-15:05

    A Jesus authentic ministry.

    15:06-15:10

Chapter 3, jot this down, "Dependents." Dependents.

    15:12-15:14

So Jesus sends them out two by two.

    15:14-15:18

He gives them authority, as He gives us authority in His Word.

    15:19-15:39

It says, "He charged them," this is wild here, "He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff." No bread, no bag, no money in their belts, but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.

    15:40-15:48

And He said to them, "Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there." Dependence.

    15:51-15:53

I think you see readily why there were no female apostles.

    15:55-15:58

Jesus sent them on a trip and told them not to pack anything.

    16:00-16:01

Is that what your Bible says?

    16:03-16:04

    That's called inferring.

    16:05-16:12

This passage is not saying, "Don't pay the preacher." Like I'm having second thoughts about that now after that last comment.

    16:13-16:17

First Corinthians 9 talks all about, you know, paying the preacher.

    16:17-16:19

That's not what this passage is saying.

    16:20-16:22

What this passage is saying is that this is training.

    16:23-16:33

This was boot camp that Jesus was sending his apostles on, and the lesson here is for the apostles to learn that God provides.

    16:34-16:36

    That was the lesson here.

    16:38-16:47

Jesus said, "When you go out to preach," basically what he was saying was, "Don't pack anything." Now, joking aside, that would really bother me.

    16:48-16:50

    Like, seriously, like, no suitcase?

    16:50-16:51

    No, don't take a suitcase.

    16:51-17:18

How about like a knapsack? Don't take a knapsack. How about like one of those sticks with the hanky tied on the end? Some of you guys know what I'm talking about, right? Some of you are like, "I have no idea." Derek will explain that. But like, "Can I at least take that?" No. "I have a coat with really big pockets." No, don't wear that coat. Why? Jesus wanted to teach them, "You're going to have to trust God God to provide.

    17:20-17:22

You're going to have to trust God to provide.

    17:22-17:28

And we see that the lesson went full circle, jot this reference down, Luke 22, verse 35.

    17:28-17:30

    Jesus was talking about this.

    17:30-17:58

Like retrospect, Jesus said to the disciples in Luke 22, 35, "When I sent you out with no money bag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." He said to them, "But now let the one who has a money bag take it and likewise a knapsack, and let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one." So you see, lesson learned.

    17:58-18:04

Jesus said, "Were you lacking anything when you went out?" And they're like, "No." Jesus is like, "Okay, then you get it.

    18:05-18:12

Here's the lesson God provides." That's a lesson we learned at Harvest Bible Chapel that we never want to leave behind us.

    18:13-18:28

2011 and some of you were here from the very beginning. I think of people like the Fredricks, Paul Persick. What did we have in the beginning? What did we start?

    18:28-18:42

Nothing, right? What did we have? Nothing. True or false? I remember opening a bank account with nothing. I remember the day that, remember after the one core group meeting, we bought a trailer.

    18:43-18:44

And what was in the trailer, Ken?

    18:45-18:45

    Nothing.

    18:46-18:48

Oh, I so wish we had a picture.

    18:48-18:53

It's one of those things that you're kind of embarrassed at the time you don't want to take a picture, but now looking back, I just wish that we had.

    18:54-18:57

But we're all standing in the parking lot looking at our empty trailer.

    18:58-19:01

We're like, "Wow, we got a trailer." There was nothing in it.

    19:02-19:03

Like, what, are we going to have church in there?

    19:05-19:09

I remember the days, meeting in Paul Persick's basement.

    19:10-19:10

    Remember that?

    19:12-19:13

    Why were we meeting there?

    19:14-19:15

Because what did we have as a church?

    19:16-19:16

    We had nothing.

    19:19-19:27

I remember sitting in the training center, fall, winter 2010 to the beginning of 2011.

    19:27-19:49

I remember in the training center before Aaron and I came to be part of this plant, I remember people like James McDonald and Rick Donald and Kirk Van Maan and some of these other guys coming in, Bill Molinari coming in talking to us about how the church plant sort of happens.

    19:51-20:09

And I remember sitting there thinking to myself, "How does that happen?" over and over they would say, "God makes it happen. God makes it happen." I remember going through the core group phase when I would meet with people that wanted to be a part of starting this church. I remember several times people asking, "So how does this work?

    20:09-20:20

Does James MacDonald buy you guys a building?" Yeah, he pulls out his checkbook and he says, "You just tell us what kind of a building you want. I'll write you a check." No, that's That's not how it happens.

    20:21-20:28

I remember saying to our core group, if James MacDonald bought us a building, our songs would sound a lot different, right?

    20:29-20:34

We'd be singing songs about praise James MacDonald, how awesome James MacDonald is.

    20:35-20:38

I'll hail the power of James MacDonald's name.

    20:40-20:43

God will provide and he will get the glory.

    20:43-20:44

Remember how many times we said that, Ken?

    20:45-20:47

God will provide and he will get the glory.

    20:47-20:51

But I'll be honest with you, I remember days and nights wondering how it was going to happen.

    20:52-20:53

I'll just be honest with you.

    20:53-20:56

You can say, "Man, your faith was weak." Okay, maybe it was.

    20:57-21:01

Maybe I did struggle for a season wondering like how is it going to happen?

    21:03-21:06

And the answer is just as we were told, God makes it happen.

    21:08-21:14

We are just as dependent upon Him today to provide as we were in September of 2011.

    21:16-21:19

He taught us that He's going to provide.

    21:20-21:23

And that lesson isn't like 11th grade chemistry.

    21:24-21:26

    You remember 11th grade chemistry?

    21:26-21:27

    I sure don't.

    21:28-21:32

Here's what I remember from 11th grade chemistry taking my last final.

    21:33-21:38

I remember going, "I am so glad I am done learning that stuff." Some of you guys need it.

    21:38-21:39

    I, in fact, do not.

    21:40-21:53

This was a lesson that Jesus wanted His disciples to remember and Jesus wants His church to remember, a Jesus authentic ministry goes out with nothing except for one thing, and that is dependence.

    21:54-21:55

    Dependence.

    21:56-22:06

Jesus said to his twelve, "Don't take anything with you, just learn to trust for God to provide." Number four, determination.

    22:08-22:08

    Determination.

    22:10-22:12

Another aspect of a Jesus authentic ministry.

    22:12-22:40

Verse 11, "And if any place will not receive you, and they will not listen to you, when you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them." You know, this was something that the Jews actually did when they went from a Gentile territory back into a Jewish territory.

    22:40-22:41

    Did you know that?

    22:42-22:51

I think if a Jewish man was traveling, as soon as he crossed that state line from Gentile to Jewish territory, that's what he would do.

    22:52-22:58

Let's leave the dirt on the Gentile territory because I don't want to track Gentile dirt on the Jewish land.

    22:59-23:13

And Jesus said, "That's the kind of mindset that you need to take when somebody rejects your message." He says, "Just shake the dirt off your shoes." This is a lesson that I'm still learning.

    23:14-23:20

Because I want everyone to love and accept me, and I can take hard words and rejection very seriously.

    23:22-23:24

And I have a tendency to not move on.

    23:26-23:36

God's still teaching me, but what I'm learning is there comes a time when you just have to realize Matthew 7, verse 6, sometimes you're just casting your pearls before pigs.

    23:38-23:40

And in the face of rejection, it's time to move on.

    23:40-23:46

The Jesus authentic ministry doesn't throw in the towel in the face of rejection.

    23:48-23:51

When things get hard, a Jesus authentic ministry keeps moving forward.

    23:52-23:54

Like, well why in the world would we face rejection?

    23:56-23:58

Because the message itself is confrontational.

    23:59-24:03

That's why number five, write down the word "boldness." Boldness.

    24:05-24:06

Look with me at verse 12.

    24:07-24:15

So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent, boldness.

    24:15-24:20

It's a difficult message to preach, but it's a necessary message to preach.

    24:22-24:28

It would be much easier every Sunday to just stand up and give a message, "Let's just try to be nice to people.

    24:28-24:30

Let's try to be the smiley guy at work.

    24:32-24:34

Let's always make sure we're always saying kind things.

    24:34-24:36

Let's always make sure that we're trying to help people.

    24:36-24:37

Look, all of those things are true.

    24:39-24:48

But the gospel message starts with this, and every preacher in the Bible, including Jesus, preached the message of repentance.

    24:49-24:52

Like, well that sounds so Old Testament.

    24:52-24:55

I was reading in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 last night.

    24:55-25:41

Do you know, of the seven churches that Jesus sent a message to in the book of Revelation, of them. He said you need to repent of something. I think with the exception of Smyrna and Philadelphia, those were the only two churches that Jesus didn't say repent. Every other church, He said there's something that you need to repent of. Cover, cover in your Bible, every preacher, every prophet, repent. God never offers forgiveness without repentance. You're like, well what Literally, the Greek word is "change your mind." Change your mind.

    25:43-25:44

    Change my mind about what?

    25:44-25:47

Change your mind about sin and change your mind about God.

    25:48-25:55

Because by nature, before we come to Christ, we're in love with our sin.

    25:57-26:00

We have our backs turned on God.

    26:01-26:02

And repentance means turn that around.

    26:03-26:03

    Change your mind.

    26:04-26:06

You should be disgusted by your sin.

    26:07-26:09

And you should love the God who loves you.

    26:10-26:16

That's the first step in coming to Christ, and you can't come to Christ without repentance.

    26:19-26:20

    Literally change your mind.

    26:21-26:23

A lot of times we associate repentance with action.

    26:25-26:26

    But that's the fruit.

    26:28-26:29

    That's not the root.

    26:30-26:37

You should see some actions change if you truly repent, because if your faith hasn't changed you, then your faith hasn't saved you.

    26:39-26:44

Several years ago, I was completely heartbroken because this news story came out.

    26:46-26:48

The stuff that Taco Bell was serving wasn't actually me.

    26:50-26:51

    Did you hear about this?

    26:51-26:53

How many people heard about this?

    26:54-26:55

    Just a couple of you.

    26:55-26:56

    I am so sorry.

    26:57-27:37

I feel like I'm talking about Santa Claus a room of preschoolers now, I was heartbroken. They said it's not real meat. Some of it is, but the other stuff in the stuff is what they call filler. I was devastated and I stopped eating at Taco Bell. I've only been back since then, that was in 2010. I've eaten Taco Bell Just for old times sake. But the reason I bring that up, my mind completely changed.

    27:37-28:13

And I don't know if these stories are true or not, I don't know. Okay, I'm not like on this anti-Taco Bell campaign or anything. I don't know if this stuff is true, but I'll tell you what did happen. My mind changed about Taco Bell. Where before I thought it was so good and wholesome and health food. Then I hear this and I'm like my mind changed. I'm like, "They put what in the meat?" I went from loving it to the thought of it disgusted me, and I stopped eating there. But do you see how changing my mind also changed my attitude? I'm sorry, changed my action.

    28:14-28:36

And that's what repentance is like. Your sin is like a chili cheese burrito that that you have been loving and enjoying, and then when you find out how disgusting it really is, and your mind changes, you're going to stop eating.

    28:36-28:37

    Your actions change.

    28:37-28:38

    That's repentance.

    28:39-28:41

That's what it means to repent.

    28:43-28:47

In Jesus' authentic ministry, it means you have to be bold and loving enough to share hard truth.

    28:49-28:52

    Verse 6, glory, glory.

    28:54-29:02

Verse 13 says, "And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them." King Herod heard of it.

    29:04-29:27

"For Jesus' name had become known." Some said, "John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, that is why these miraculous powers are at work in him." And others said, "He is Elijah." And others said, "He's a prophet, like one of the prophets of old." Glory.

    29:29-29:31

    Look at verse 14.

    29:32-29:32

    What became known?

    29:34-29:36

Look at your Bible, tell me, what became known?

    29:38-29:38

    Jesus' name.

    29:40-29:44

You know that you have a Jesus authentic ministry when Jesus is magnified.

    29:46-29:49

it doesn't say, "Wow, look at all these great things Peter was doing.

    29:50-29:59

Look at this great movement of James the Less." Or "Wow, the Zebedee brothers really have this thing going on." It was, what was being made known?

    30:00-30:01

    Jesus' name.

    30:03-30:14

And Harvest Bible Chapel, if you would leave here saying, "Wow, so and so is a good musician," or "Wow, the girl that handles the slides, she is just on it.

    30:14-30:15

He's like the best part of the church.

    30:15-30:23

We kind of failed to do our job if we're not about Jesus' name being made known.

    30:25-30:32

A Jesus authentic ministry has a spotlight on Jesus, His church, His power, His mission, His name alone on the marquee.

    30:34-30:39

Finally, number seven, a mark of a Jesus authentic ministry is perseverance.

    30:43-31:00

Verse 16, "But when Herod heard of it, he said, 'John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.'" Now verses 17 through 29 is a flashback.

    31:01-31:54

And we saw the impact that Jesus was having and verse 16 is saying, "It even made it all the way to the king. And what we're about to read, this flashback, as a soap opera, unlike anything you've ever heard. This account that we're about to read with Herod and Herodias and this whole event, this is stuff that's actually even a little too raw for Jerry Springer. Crazy. Let's work our way through the text. Verse 17 says, "Okay, flashback, for it was Herod who had sent and seized John the Baptist and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her.

    31:55-32:05

For John had been saying to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death, but she could not.

    32:06-32:12

For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe.

    32:14-32:27

When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly." I'm going to try to explain, I'm going to give you the CliffsNotes version of what's happening here.

    32:28-32:32

And I'd encourage you to do a little homework, because this is even crazier than I have time to really get into.

    32:33-32:35

This whole story is just completely crazy.

    32:35-32:37

Okay, so first of all, Herod.

    32:38-32:38

    Who's Herod?

    32:39-32:41

Well, we read about him in Luke chapter 3 verse 1.

    32:41-32:48

This is Herod the Tetrarch, which literally means ruler of a fourth of a kingdom.

    32:49-32:51

His dad was Herod the Great.

    32:53-32:54

Herod the Great had ten wives.

    32:56-32:59

So there were lots of little Herods running around, as you can imagine.

    33:00-33:06

Now, Herod the Great, I need like a chalkboard to kind of map this out.

    33:07-33:13

Herod the Great, we know him from Matthew chapter 2, he's the baby killer.

    33:14-33:20

You know in the Christmas story, the story of the Magi, that's that Herod, that's Herod the Great.

    33:22-33:32

He died about 4 BC, but he had a will that said when he died his kingdom should be divided into four parts for four of his sons.

    33:34-33:41

So the Herod in this passage is actually Herod Antipas, one of Herod's great sons.

    33:42-33:45

He ruled over the quarter that contained Galilee.

    33:46-33:47

    Everybody with me so far?

    33:48-33:50

    Okay, so who is Herodias?

    33:50-34:01

So verse 17 says that Herodias was Herod Antipas' brother Philip's wife, and Herod Antipas married her.

    34:03-34:04

    Here's where it gets crazy.

    34:05-34:12

Herodias is actually the daughter of another son of Herod the Great.

    34:13-34:14

Herod the Great, ten wives, all these little Herods.

    34:15-34:19

Herodias was the daughter of another one of those sons.

    34:22-34:39

Right now you are kind of doing the family tree thing in your mind and you are like, "No way." And I am like, "Yeah way." Herodias was Herod the Great's granddaughter, that is the daughter of one of Herod Antipas' half-brothers, that is Herodias was Herod Antipas' niece.

    34:42-34:48

And she originally married Philip, which would have been, are you with me so far?

    34:48-34:51

Like Philip would have been one of her uncles.

    34:53-34:55

    Yeah, that is what happened.

    34:57-35:04

So she married one of her uncles, and then she married Herod Antipas, who was actually what?

    35:05-35:06

    Another uncle.

    35:08-35:14

Most of the men that she married, Philip and then Herod Antipas, were her biological father's half-brothers.

    35:16-35:20

Needless to say, this made Thanksgiving very awkward.

    35:21-35:25

There's even much more to the story that I don't have time to get into today.

    35:25-35:26

    It's crazy.

    35:26-35:26

    Look it up.

    35:28-35:30

The whole story is just absolutely sick.

    35:32-35:33

Okay, so we're on the same page.

    35:34-35:53

It says, verse 21, "But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee." Notice I emphasize the word "men." Without getting too graphic, this was a man party.

    35:54-35:57

You hear stories of the cliche, the bachelor party, right?

    35:59-36:02

This would have made your typical bachelor party look like Disney World.

    36:03-36:09

This was a party for men, a wild, sinful celebration.

    36:11-36:13

Every year trying to outdo the last one.

    36:14-36:25

Verse 22 says, "For when Herodias' daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests.

    36:25-36:44

And the king said to the girl, 'Ask me whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.' And he vowed to her, "Whatever you ask me, I will give you up to half my kingdom." Okay, Herodias' daughter was actually Philip's daughter.

    36:46-36:53

So now, she would have been Herod Antipas' niece and stepdaughter at the same time.

    36:54-36:58

Not much forking here in this family tree.

    36:59-37:00

    Her name was Salome.

    37:02-37:36

And she went out and said to her mother, "For what should I ask?" And she, Herodias, said, "The head of John the Baptist." And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, "I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter." And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests, he did not want to break his word to her." What a sick picture this is.

    37:37-37:48

You have this family member coming in doing this erotic dance that was pleasing family members that were present and sick.

    37:49-37:50

I'll give you whatever you want, baby.

    37:52-37:54

We want you to put John the Baptist's head on a plate.

    37:54-37:55

    That's what we want.

    37:56-38:02

Verse 27 says, "Immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring back John's head.

    38:04-38:11

He went and beheaded him in the prison and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

    38:14-38:23

When his disciples heard of it," this is John the Baptist's disciples, "When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body." And laid it in a tomb.

    38:24-38:27

    John the Baptist didn't lose.

    38:29-38:31

He actually crossed the finish line very strong.

    38:31-38:34

And I believe that's why this flashback is here in Mark.

    38:34-38:35

Remember what we started talking about?

    38:36-38:38

Jesus sends the twelve out on this preaching mission.

    38:41-38:45

And Mark is showing us in this flashback, sometimes ministries like this.

    38:47-38:51

If you take a bold stand for Jesus Christ, it could cost you financially.

    38:52-38:53

It could cost you your freedom.

    38:55-38:57

Jesus said it could even cost you your life.

    38:59-39:07

But Jesus said in Matthew 10, Matthew 24, Mark chapter 13, over and over, Jesus said, the one who endures to the end will be saved.

    39:08-39:10

True saving faith is persevering faith.

    39:12-39:22

I believe that's why Mark includes this story as a flashback when the apostles are being sent out to drive home this point.

    39:23-39:24

It doesn't matter that you start.

    39:26-39:29

What matters is that you finish.

    39:31-39:33

The Christian race starting is so easy.

    39:33-39:34

    Everybody is starting.

    39:34-39:35

Everybody is getting up to the starting blocks.

    39:37-39:38

    Starting is easy.

    39:40-39:43

    and finishing is hard.

    39:45-39:55

And that's why a Jesus authentic ministry is swinging until the final bell of the last round.

Unbelief: Jesus is Amazed

Unbelief is Amazing Because...

  1. It chooses to ignore the EVIDENCE (Mk 6:1-2)

  2. It chooses to object with IRRELEVANCE (Mk 6:3a)

  3. It chooses to think with EMOTION (Mk 6:3b-4)

  4. It chooses to forfeit BLESSING (Mk 6:5-6)

  • 00:00-00:03

Well, today we're going to Jesus' hometown.

    00:04-00:10

Mark chapter 6, your Bible tells you that Jesus went back to his hometown.

    00:10-00:19

And the thing with hometowns, especially little ones, everybody kind of knows everybody, right?

    00:20-00:23

Sally, that was certainly the case where you're from, right?

    00:25-00:28

And Tom, I'm sure everybody in a town of 100.

    00:29-00:30

Let me tell you how crazy it was for us.

    00:32-00:36

I feel like Shakurah now is like Mexico City after talking to some of these other people.

    00:40-00:42

Our father was a bank manager.

    00:43-00:50

It was Citizens, what's it called now, Nextier, it's up at the top of the hill by the grocery store that was Foodland and now it's Freedman's or whatever.

    00:51-00:52

    But anyways, right?

    00:54-01:02

The dad was a bank manager, and being in a town of about a thousand people and your dad's the bank manager, like, everybody knew who we were.

    01:02-01:18

"Oh, you're Dick Miller's son." I remember one time, I was, after school I was going to my friend's house, and came home, dad was looking at me.

    01:20-01:21

I could tell he was not happy.

    01:21-02:47

knowing your dad's not happy, right? He said, "Dick Hillis called me." I'm like, "Oh?" He goes, "He said you took that turn in Petroia awfully fast by his place. Slow it down!" Do you remember this, Darren? Dick Hillis was the funeral home director in the next town over. Now I only got this side of the story, but I had to wonder, I had to wonder what was happening in the funeral home. You know, like Dick Hillis at the funeral home and he's consoling people, "Yeah, I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm just..." Hang on. You're gonna have to give me a second. I think that was Jeff Miller that just went around that. That was Jeff Miller. Hang on a second. I gotta get on the phone, "Dick, you're not going to believe what your son just did." He had the time down and everything. Yeah, Dick Hill has said at a quarter to five, you took that turn awfully fast. Nark. Well, that's how it is in a little hometown, right? You big city people right now are like, "I'm not quite sure what you're talking about." And that's okay. But when When you're from a little town, that's the kind of stuff that happens.

    02:47-02:54

Well here, God in the flesh actually went back to his hometown, which was Nazareth.

    02:54-02:55

And do you know how big Nazareth was?

    02:56-02:59

    Nazareth was about 500 people.

    03:00-03:00

    Okay?

    03:01-03:08

So like half of Shekura are like 10 times the size of Salyburg.

    03:10-03:25

But Mark 6 says, "He went away from there and came to his hometown and his disciples followed him." And as we're going on tour with Jesus, this stop takes us to his hometown.

    03:27-03:29

    Was this his first visit?

    03:29-03:39

Well, it's the first visit that we read about in the Gospel of Mark, but did you know this was actually the second and the last visit that Jesus made to his hometown?

    03:39-03:40

    Did you know that?

    03:41-03:43

The first was actually in Luke chapter 4.

    03:44-03:59

Jesus showed up and he read from the book of Isaiah and he said, "Today the scriptures are being fulfilled." And do you know how the people in his hometown responded to his claim about being the Messiah?

    04:00-04:03

Luke chapter 4 tells us they tried to throw him off of a cliff.

    04:05-04:08

And you small-town people kind of get that, don't you?

    04:10-04:16

That in a small town, your neighbor is also the lunch lady and is also the librarian and they're also the gym teacher, the constable, and the mayor.

    04:17-04:27

And if I showed up in Shakur and started walking around saying, "I'm God," you can imagine the kind of reactions that people are going to have.

    04:27-04:27

    Not pretty.

    04:30-04:36

and over throughout the gospel of Mark, we read that the crowds were amazed by Jesus.

    04:36-04:52

We saw this last week, Mark chapter 5 verse 42. Over and over, they were amazed at His teaching. They were astonished. Everyone marveled. But in this passage that we're going to look at today, it says that Jesus is amazed. I want you to jump down with me in verse 6.

    04:55-05:10

It says, "And he and Jesus, and he marveled because of their unbelief." When you study the life of Jesus, do you know the Bible only talks about two events that marveled Jesus?

    05:10-05:11

    Did you know that?

    05:13-05:17

There were two events that just left Jesus completely astonished.

    05:17-05:20

One was the faith of the centurion.

    05:21-05:22

Okay, you can read about that.

    05:22-05:26

in Matthew chapter 8, that's in Luke chapter 7.

    05:28-05:32

The centurion showed great faith in the person and the power of Jesus.

    05:33-05:35

    Jesus marveled in his faith.

    05:36-05:40

This is the only other instance that the Bible tells us that Jesus marveled.

    05:42-05:44

And what happened to make Jesus marvel?

    05:44-05:45

    Well, we saw it here.

    05:45-05:47

He marveled because of their what?

    05:48-05:48

    Verse 6.

    05:50-05:51

He marveled because of their what?

    05:52-06:14

unbelief. If you were with us last week, we talked about faith. We talked about how faith comes to God in humility and it believes that God can and will help me. And faith trusts, even if God seems late, and faith accepts what we don't understand. Faith is powerful.

    06:14-06:15

    Amen?

    06:15-06:16

    Faith is powerful.

    06:17-06:18

Do you know what Jesus said about faith?

    06:18-06:20

    Faith can move mountains.

    06:22-06:24

But do you know what else is powerful?

    06:26-06:26

    Unbelief.

    06:29-06:30

    Unbelief is powerful.

    06:31-06:33

Faith is powerful as it moves towards God.

    06:33-06:37

Unbelief is also powerful because you're moving away from God.

    06:39-06:41

    Unbelief invites God's wrath.

    06:44-06:48

Unbelief is what casts people into hell.

    06:49-06:53

And unbelief, the only thing unbelief has to look forward to is God's judgment.

    06:54-07:20

Jesus said in John 8, 24, "I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." So in this passage we see today, we're going to look at God shows up in his hometown and their rejection amazes him.

    07:21-07:27

Can we just pause for like three seconds and try to wrap our brains around the concept that Jesus was amazed by something?

    07:28-07:31

How many other people here think that that concept is amazing?

    07:31-07:35

I mean, the Bible says Jesus knows what was in the heart of a man.

    07:37-07:37

    Jesus knew.

    07:38-07:38

    Did Jesus know?

    07:39-07:40

    Did Jesus know?

    07:41-07:43

Did Jesus know He was going to be rejected?

    07:43-07:44

    Of course He did.

    07:46-08:05

But this rejection, this unbelief was of such magnitude that the Bible says that God Almighty incarnate marveled at how incredible this unbelief was.

    08:07-08:08

    Why did he marvel?

    08:08-08:09

    How did that happen?

    08:09-08:10

I want you to write these things down.

    08:10-08:13

This is on your outline if you have a bulletin.

    08:14-08:15

    Grab your inserts.

    08:17-08:18

    Unbelief is amazing.

    08:19-08:25

You're like, "Why is unbelief amazing?" Well, unbelief is amazing, number one, it chooses to ignore the evidence.

    08:26-09:11

chooses to ignore the evidence. Look at verses 1 and 2. Again, "He went away from there and came to his hometown, Nazareth, and his disciples followed him. And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue." That's what Jesus commonly did. It says, "And many who heard him were astonished." By the way, astonished does not equal faith, right? Astonished to your co-worker that you know doesn't follow the Lord, say, "Hey, our little young church plant just raised almost $6,000 to help a church in Moldova." They'll be astonished by that, but that doesn't mean they've suddenly come to faith in Jesus.

    09:11-09:12

    Does that make sense?

    09:13-09:35

Well, these were people that heard the teaching of Jesus and were absolutely blown away at and his wisdom." Picking up in verse 2, "Saying, these astonished people were saying, 'Where did this man get these things?

    09:36-09:38

What is the wisdom given to him?

    09:39-09:48

How are such mighty works done by his hands?'" Unbelief is amazing because it chooses to ignore the evidence.

    09:49-09:52

You have to notice, first of all, they didn't deny his wisdom or his work.

    09:52-09:53

    You notice that?

    09:54-09:57

These weren't a group of people that were like, "Well, I don't really think he's that wise.

    09:58-09:59

    I mean, yeah, he's okay.

    09:59-10:06

He's like a C-minus teacher." These were people blown away, and they knew that he was a miracle worker.

    10:07-10:14

They weren't saying, "We think he's some kind of a charlatan or a trickster." They said, "This guy does some awesome things.

    10:15-10:15

    How does he do it?

    10:16-10:25

Where does this stuff come from?" They thought it was more important to ponder where it came from than what it was.

    10:27-10:28

It's obvious where it came from.

    10:29-10:44

Somebody who taught like Jesus taught, somebody who did the miracles that Jesus performed, there's only one answer to the question, "Where did this come from?" What's the answer?

    10:46-10:47

    It came from God.

    10:49-10:50

    This is supernatural.

    10:50-10:52

This is beyond anything of the earth.

    10:55-11:02

Actually in John 5:36, Jesus said that His works were to authenticate His person.

    11:02-11:04

That's the reason Jesus did the miracles, by the way.

    11:04-11:05

    You know that, right?

    11:05-11:08

Jesus wasn't like this magic performer, like ta-da.

    11:11-11:13

They were acts of compassion, healing.

    11:13-11:14

    They always benefited people.

    11:17-11:21

But the reason He performed the miracles was to point to who He was.

    11:21-11:26

He wasn't just some preacher, He wasn't just some rabbi, He was God in the flesh.

    11:28-11:33

But ignoring the evidence is the first sign of unbelief.

    11:34-11:35

I want you to jot this reference down.

    11:37-11:39

Romans 118, this is a whole other sermon.

    11:41-11:56

Romans 118 says, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth." These are people that suppress the truth.

    11:57-11:57

    By what?

    11:58-12:00

Your Bible says by unrighteousness, by sin.

    12:02-12:03

Like, what do you mean by that?

    12:04-12:06

What I mean is the evidence is there.

    12:07-12:08

    The evidence is totally there.

    12:10-12:13

I just grabbed random stuff from my shelf here.

    12:13-12:14

    There's so much more.

    12:16-12:17

    The evidence is there.

    12:18-12:19

    Refuting evolution.

    12:20-12:27

I've given out a lot of these books, very scientific, looking at the idea of creation versus evolution from a scientific perspective.

    12:28-12:29

    The case for Christ.

    12:29-12:31

How many people have read the case for Christ?

    12:32-12:32

    Fantastic.

    12:34-12:35

And how about the case for faith?

    12:36-12:36

    Like who's read this one?

    12:37-12:38

You guys read the case for faith?

    12:38-12:39

    You should read that one.

    12:39-12:40

    That's a good one.

    12:41-12:42

Oh, here's the case for Christmas.

    12:42-12:45

Now, I think you're just marketing yourself, Strobel.

    12:47-12:50

    Defeating Darwinism by opening minds.

    12:50-12:52

This is an easy to understand one.

    12:52-12:54

It's got like pages you can color and stuff.

    12:55-12:59

The ultimate proof of creation, resolving the origins debate.

    13:01-13:03

The origin of life equipping course.

    13:03-14:06

This is a purely scientific approach to examining, is it possible for life as we know it to come through the macroevolutionary model? The answer is absolutely not. And I dug through my filing cabinet. Look what I found. Here's some creation materials that I've researched and amassed. Oh, and here's some more. So many that I couldn't even fit in one. Here is a binder of research that I've compiled on apologetics and studying all of the religions of the world. Not all of them, there's like 9,000 and some, but you understand that there's like different branches of Hinduism and Buddhism and many branches. But studying all of the major mainstream religions of the world and history and archeology, those are just some of my notes. That doesn't even include all the stuff I have on my computer, which if If I were to print that out, I'd probably need to borrow the church trailer just to haul it.

    14:07-14:09

    Like, what's the point?

    14:09-14:10

The point is the evidence is there.

    14:12-14:15

The point is we have reason to believe that the Bible is true.

    14:16-14:24

Science backs what the Bible says about creation, things reproducing after their own kind.

    14:27-14:28

    Archeology backs the Bible.

    14:29-14:42

history actually backs the Bible? And the person that says, "Well, how do we know the Bible that we have today is actually what was originally written?" That's one of the big questions people get. You know, "Well, the Bible's been translated so many times.

    14:43-15:01

How do we know that that's what it was originally written?" Well, the way you test for that is called the bibliographical test. Okay? I wasn't there. Were you there? No. But the The way you test an ancient document to see if its message has been preserved through the generations is called the bibliographical test.

    15:01-15:02

    What does that mean?

    15:03-15:11

That means you compile all the ancient copies that are known to exist and compare them one with another to see if the message is consistent.

    15:12-15:28

The number two document in history that passes the bibliographical test for reliability of an ancient text is the Iliad written by Homer, not Simpson, the poet.

    15:30-15:31

Okay, do you know how many copies there are?

    15:32-15:34

    Just north of 600 copies.

    15:35-15:41

That means they have 600 and some copies of the Iliad that they've lined up.

    15:42-15:44

    Is the message consistent throughout?

    15:47-16:02

Any college professor, any English professor will say, "Yeah, what we have today in the Iliad is a reliable document because we have so much ancient evidence." You know what the number one document is for the bibliographical test?

    16:03-16:04

    Take a guess.

    16:05-16:05

    The New Testament.

    16:07-16:11

Remember, the Iliad has like just north of 600 copies.

    16:12-16:16

Do you know how many ancient copies of the New Testament we're able to line up to match?

    16:17-16:19

    Over 20,000.

    16:20-16:22

That's what you were going to say, right Jay?

    16:23-16:25

    Yeah, over 20,000.

    16:27-16:31

We have over 20,000 ancient copies that we can line up.

    16:31-16:32

    Is the message consistent?

    16:33-16:34

    And what is the answer?

    16:35-16:36

    The answer is yes.

    16:36-16:43

Yes, the Bible that you're holding in your hands is as was originally written.

    16:45-16:52

And you get into these discussions with people about the evidence, about creation, archaeology, history, and the reliability of Scripture.

    16:53-16:57

You get in these discussions with people and you share with them some of the things that I just shared with you.

    16:58-17:00

Many times this is the reaction I've gotten.

    17:02-17:03

    I don't know.

    17:05-17:08

I don't know if the Bible we have was accurately translated.

    17:09-17:14

You share the whole bibliographical thing, and they're like, "Yeah, I don't know." Like, you don't know what?

    17:16-17:17

    What about experiential evidence?

    17:18-17:23

What about the impact that God and His Word have had on lives right here?

    17:26-17:41

Do you know, this blows my mind, but do you know, after giving almost $6,000 to help of pastor and his family that you don't know, in a country most of you never heard of.

    17:42-17:50

Last week, actually last Sunday, immediately after service, I found out that one of our church family here had an emergency.

    17:52-18:04

And we sent an email out to our church body saying, "Hey, New Testament Church, right, rally around this family that's in need and try to help them with this emergency.

    18:07-18:13

And you gave another, how much was it, like 2,000 and some more?

    18:14-18:15

    Blows my mind.

    18:16-18:18

You can go tell somebody that.

    18:19-18:21

Like, "Listen to how awesome God is.

    18:21-18:27

Look at how He's working in our church." Somebody's going to hear that and just be like, "I don't know.

    18:27-18:28

I wonder what really happened there.

    18:29-18:30

    I wonder what really happened.

    18:32-18:33

I wonder what's really going on.

    18:33-18:41

I bet Ken has this rich uncle that he called, and that's how that really happened, and they're just kind of like putting God on the hook for that.

    18:41-18:42

    I don't know.

    18:43-18:44

I don't know what really happened there.

    18:46-18:49

Unbelief chooses to ignore the evidence.

    18:50-18:58

The problem is not, "Well, I don't have any evidence to show people." The problem is people don't want to deal with the evidence that's before them.

    18:58-18:59

That's what was happening with Jesus.

    19:00-19:11

He was giving this evidence that He was God, and their response was, "Where does He get these things?" Why don't people want to deal with the evidence?

    19:11-19:17

Because if there's a God, I'm accountable to that God, and He should be the boss, not me.

    19:18-19:20

He should have reign over my life, not me.

    19:22-19:28

That's why Paul tells us in Romans that people that choose to believe suppress the truth.

    19:30-19:31

The issue isn't lack of evidence.

    19:31-19:34

The issue is I love my sin too much to give it up.

    19:35-19:37

I love my sin too much to be saved from it.

    19:39-19:44

Is there like an option from Jesus where I can be saved in my sin and not saved from my sin?

    19:45-19:47

Is there a "I can still sin as much as I want" option?

    19:48-19:52

Is there a, "God doesn't tell me what to do, but I can still go to heaven" option?

    19:52-19:53

    No.

    19:53-19:54

    No.

    19:54-19:55

    No.

    19:55-19:57

It is about dying to yourself.

    19:58-20:01

It is about carrying your cross daily.

    20:03-20:05

    It's about turning from sin.

    20:05-20:06

    It's about repentance.

    20:09-20:13

The unbelieving mind doesn't want to deal with those things because you just love your sin too much.

    20:13-20:14

    You just love your sin.

    20:14-20:16

I would rather have that than Jesus.

    20:18-20:19

    What about all this evidence?

    20:20-20:23

What about… It's just suppressing the truth.

    20:23-20:25

I don't want to deal with it.

    20:26-20:28

That's the first thing that's amazing about unbelief.

    20:28-20:35

The second one, number two, it chooses to object with irrelevance.

    20:37-20:41

It chooses to object with irrelevance.

    20:41-20:42

Like, what do you mean by that?

    20:43-20:44

    Other questions continue.

    20:44-20:45

    Look at verse three.

    20:45-20:51

Is this not, excuse me, is not this the carpenter?

    20:53-20:55

You have to understand what an insult this was.

    20:55-20:57

    Not like bashing carpenters, okay?

    21:00-21:02

But the way that they were saying this was an insult.

    21:05-21:10

I have mad respect for people that can work with wood because I can't.

    21:12-21:16

When I was in high school in woodshop, I made a paperweight.

    21:19-21:22

    Actually, I made five paperweights.

    21:24-21:28

They weren't supposed to be paperweights, but that's what they all ended up.

    21:29-21:30

So I have mad respect, okay?

    21:31-21:35

But understand that when they were saying, is not this the carpenter, this was a bit of a slam.

    21:36-21:40

Like, this guy's just a carpenter.

    21:41-21:43

    Is not this the carpenter?

    21:43-21:49

the son of Mary and brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?

    21:51-21:53

And are not his sisters here with us?

    21:56-21:58

It chooses to object with irrelevance.

    21:59-22:05

Okay, so God shows up and he's like teaching in your synagogue this Sabbath day.

    22:06-22:18

And they're like, "Isn't this guy just like the carpenter and like we know his mother and brothers and sisters and question, what does any of that have to do with anything?

    22:19-22:19

    Right?

    22:21-22:29

Instead of looking at the evidence, unbelief chooses to occupy itself with matters that make no difference.

    22:32-22:32

    Did you see that?

    22:33-22:34

    What difference does it make?

    22:34-22:36

Yeah, his sisters are here, so what?

    22:37-22:38

    Yeah.

    22:38-22:44

Yeah, he was a carpenter for a while, and that disqualifies him from being Messiah how?

    22:47-22:55

The people that object with irrelevance, you have to understand, they sound so intelligent in their own minds when they do this.

    22:58-23:05

I remember one guy I shared the gospel with, telling him about his need for a Savior, deliverance from sin, eternal life, and Jesus Christ.

    23:06-23:07

You know what his response was?

    23:08-23:18

He like, "You know there's only 6% difference in the DNA between a human and a chimpanzee." I was like, "What?

    23:19-23:21

    Thank you, Dr. Science.

    23:21-23:22

Like, what do you say to that?

    23:23-23:24

    So what?

    23:26-23:39

Good for the chimp?" I think his point was like, "That's proof of evolution." My response is, do you know how much that 6% really stands for?

    23:42-23:45

It is volumes and volumes and volumes and volumes of genetic information.

    23:46-23:48

6% of a dollar is what?

    23:48-23:49

    Not very much.

    23:50-23:52

6% of a trillion dollars is what?

    23:52-23:53

    A lot.

    23:54-23:54

    Okay?

    23:55-24:50

When you understand how much genetic information is in your DNA, 6% is an amount of information you can't even wrap your brain around." But that was his big objection. "I'm telling you about Jesus and he wants to talk about the chimp." I shared a gospel with another guy. His response was, "You know what? I know a lady that got real religious and she went crazy." And I'm like, "Okay, where do you take the conversation from there. What does that have to do with anything? I'm telling you about your need for a Savior. What about all the contradictions in the Bible? Do you know the Bible's full of contradictions? Next time somebody tells you that, ask them for one. I'm batting a thousand on that. I've had so many people say, "You know the Bible's full of contradictions.

    24:51-25:10

You know that Bible's full of contradictions." I'm like, "Yeah, I have an open mind. Show "Uh, uh, uh, I don't know off the top of my head." Like well then maybe you shouldn't present yourself as an expert unless you actually have them ready.

    25:10-25:11

If you have them, bring them to me.

    25:12-25:15

Bring your objections and let's study the Scriptures together.

    25:15-25:16

Don't make a claim like that.

    25:17-25:19

That's just getting off of the issue.

    25:19-25:20

    You need a Savior.

    25:21-25:24

Well now let's talk about words in the Bible.

    25:27-25:33

Three years ago, my former church, we got a call at the office from a man, answer the phone.

    25:36-26:08

The receptionist says, "Hey, there's a guy that really needs to talk to you." So I'm like, "Hey, this is Pastor Jeff." The guy says, "I'm going to kill myself." I'm like, "Okay." He said, "The reason I was calling was I wanted to make sure I didn't go straight to hell if I killed myself." I said, "How did you get our number?" He said, "I just opened up the phone book and the first church I found, I called." I'm like, "Oh." I said, "Okay." He goes, "I just need to know.

    26:08-26:14

I'm going to kill myself today and I need to know." Well, I go straight to hell if I kill myself because I've heard like different teaching about that or whatever.

    26:15-26:30

I said, "Well, let me ask you a question." I said, "Do you know the Lord?" I said, "Do you know the Lord?" And he said, "Well, I don't know.

    26:31-26:56

I think, you know what man, I really don't know." And I said, "Do you really want to step into eternity not knowing where you're going to land?" And he said, "You should work for suicide hotlines." And I said, "I'm coming to your house, where do you live?" I went out to his house trying to share the gospel with him.

    26:59-27:00

    He's like, "I have a question.

    27:00-27:06

What about people of other faiths that don't believe in Jesus?" And I would just start answering that question.

    27:06-27:07

He goes, "I have another question.

    27:07-27:08

    What about UFOs?

    27:08-27:12

Do you think there's UFOs?" I start to answer that question.

    27:12-27:22

The Bible says Eve's the mother of all the living and man is created in God's image and The Bible doesn't talk about any other life as it exists on earth, outside of earth.

    27:22-27:24

I started to talk about that.

    27:24-27:36

"Well, what about the dinosaurs?" "Well, the Bible says that God created the earth and He created the animal." I would just start answering these questions and he was on to the next one, on to the next one, on to the next one.

    27:37-27:40

What about the guy sitting in Africa that ain't never seen a Bible before?

    27:42-27:45

It's funny, you weren't concerned about that guy sitting in Africa a minute ago.

    27:45-27:57

Now when we're talking about your need for a Savior, all we can think about is some guy sitting somewhere in Africa." Eventually just got to the point that I said, "You know what, man?" I said, "You have questions.

    27:57-28:04

You have a lot of questions." The questions just kept on coming and I shared with him a little bit and had a prayer with him.

    28:06-28:13

But it wasn't long into the conversation that I realized that he was asking questions that he didn't really care what the answer was before he was on to the next question.

    28:13-28:15

In church, we need to be equipped.

    28:17-28:26

But we need to acknowledge that when people start asking questions like this, what they're really doing is talking themselves out of seeking the Lord.

    28:28-28:30

What they're really doing is hardening their heart.

    28:30-28:34

That's why we see in this passage here, God is standing in front of them.

    28:35-29:39

And they just, it's just nothing but question after question after question after question question after question after question. They're not looking for answers. They just want to spit out their stupid questions. If I rationalize my objections in my own mind, I've excused myself from allowing the gospel to confront me. That's what's happening. It's going to happen to you too. So, unbelief is amazing. It chooses to ignore the evidence. It chooses to object with irrelevance. Thirdly, it chooses to think with emotion. It chooses to think with emotion. Look at the end of verse 3. After all their questions, it says, "And they took offense at him." And they took offense at him. Literally, the Greek says, "He was scandalized by them. This is what the literal Greek is. He was scandalized by them.

    29:41-29:48

Question, what was the offense again? What horrible thing did Jesus do to offend them?

    29:49-30:04

Something violent, I'm sure. No? He probably deceived them somehow. No? He probably stole something now? What was so horrible that Jesus was doing that all of these people were offended?

    30:06-31:23

What was so horrible that these 33 Christians that are being executed in North Korea, did you read about that? I just read this this morning. What was their offense? What horrible crime have they committed? Loving people, telling people about the Lord, leading people of salvation, planting in North Korea, planting 500 churches. Jesus said in John 15, 18, "If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you." Church people are going to hate you because you follow Jesus. People are going to hate you because you follow of Jesus. Please understand that's not an intellectual exercise. That is an emotional… it's a spiritual… and it's foundation, amen? It's a spiritual thing. But understand, it's not an intellectual thing. It often manifests as an emotional thing. People aren't sitting down evaluating you like you would go through your checkbook. You know, they're not sitting down saying, "Well, I might not necessarily agree with what James believes about Jesus and the Bible, but you know what?

    31:23-31:27

He seems harmless and I've seen him be very compassionate and very giving and very thoughtful.

    31:28-31:35

And even if I don't necessarily agree with Jesus, I can at least acknowledge that James seems like..." Nobody's doing that, people.

    31:35-31:36

    Nobody's doing that.

    31:38-31:41

Jesus said they're going to hate you just because of your association with Him.

    31:43-31:48

But note this, and keep this on file.

    31:50-31:57

When someone has invested themselves to an opinion emotionally, it's hard for them to change their mind.

    31:57-31:58

    True or false?

    31:59-31:59

I'm going to say that again.

    32:00-32:07

When someone has invested themselves to an opinion emotionally, it's hard for them to change their mind.

    32:08-32:09

    You want proof of that?

    32:11-32:12

    You want proof of that?

    32:13-32:16

You know what the most awkward moment in the world is?

    32:16-32:17

    You know what it is?

    32:18-32:19

    You've been there.

    32:19-32:27

The most awkward moment is when you're right in the middle of a heated argument and you realize that you're wrong.

    32:28-32:29

Has that ever happened to anyone?

    32:31-32:34

Have you ever been in an argument and you're like fired up?

    32:36-32:39

And they're like, "You so too said that.

    32:39-32:40

    I did not say that.

    32:40-32:41

    You so too said that.

    32:41-32:42

    I did not say that.

    32:42-32:43

    I would never say that.

    32:44-32:44

    You did say that.

    32:45-32:46

There is no way that I'd say that.

    32:47-32:56

You said that to my mother last Saturday when we were at her house, and you're like, "She's right." But what do you do then?

    32:58-33:00

You're like, "You're right." Is that what you do?

    33:01-33:01

    Oh, come on.

    33:01-33:02

    That's not what you do.

    33:02-33:02

    What do you do, Steve?

    33:03-33:09

You've backed yourself into a corner emotionally, and you're still coming out swinging even though that you're wrong.

    33:10-33:15

"Well, yeah, you know, I might have said that, but your mother kind of brought that out.

    33:15-33:19

I didn't really mean it the way it came out." You said it, man.

    33:19-33:20

    You said it.

    33:21-33:24

But you can't give up the fight because you've invested yourself emotionally, right?

    33:25-33:26

    That's what happened with Jesus.

    33:27-33:36

His hometown people were so opposed to him that it got to the point that they were offended by him.

    33:37-33:40

Shame on you Jesus for healing these people.

    33:41-33:43

Shame on you Jesus for raising the dead.

    33:43-33:45

Shame on you for casting out demons.

    33:46-33:49

They had their minds so made up, they were offended at Jesus Christ.

    33:52-34:07

That's why Jesus said in verse 4, Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, in his hometown and among his relatives and in his own household.

    34:10-34:16

There's an expression that we use to describe what Jesus is talking about here.

    34:16-34:16

You know what it is, right?

    34:17-34:20

    Familiarity breeds contempt, right?

    34:22-34:23

    Familiarity breeds contempt.

    34:24-35:35

Growing up in Shakora, we didn't have a lot that put Shakora on the map, but we were right next door to a little town. East Brady, birthplace of Jim Kelly. Do you know everybody up our way has a Jim Kelly story? True or false? Right? My cousins went to high school with Jim Kelly. My aunt dated Jim Kelly. Everybody's got like a Jim Kelly story. If you go up there and say, "You know what? I think Jim Kelly was a great quarterback." Your reaction is gonna be, "He was a bum. He was a bum. Yeah, my mom went to school with him. He was a bum. He was a good quarterback though, right? He was a great quarterback. He was a bum. My aunt went out with him. He made her pick up the check. He was a bum. I'm not talking about that. He was a great quarterback. He was a bomb. He's not going to get the acclaim that he deserves in his hometown. Unbelief chooses to think with emotion.

    35:35-35:53

God gave us a book so that we can seek him with our minds, and that's where the fight is going to take place for the skeptic, and it's on that level that you need to challenge. Are these things that you researched? Or is this purely an emotional response.

    35:55-35:57

    Finally, why is unbelief amazing?

    36:00-36:08

Last, and I would suggest to you most important - I would say most amazing - it chooses to forfeit blessing.

    36:09-36:10

That's the amazing thing about unbelief.

    36:11-36:12

    It chooses to forfeit blessing.

    36:12-36:13

Look at verses 5 and 6.

    36:14-36:29

Verse 5 says, "And he could do no mighty work there except that he laid his hands a few sick people and healed them. Why did He do that? Grace. Grace, compassion, love.

    36:31-36:39

But it says He could do no mighty work there. And He marveled because of their unbelief.

    36:42-36:48

And He went about among the villages teaching. It says He could do no mighty work there.

    36:48-36:54

It wasn't because of lack of power, it was lack of reason to display his power.

    36:54-36:59

Remember, we said the purpose of the miracles was to verify the truth.

    37:00-37:02

And if you reject the truth, there's really no need for miracles, right?

    37:04-37:10

Jairus and the woman that we talked about previously, they chose to believe that God can and will help me.

    37:11-37:15

And Nazarene's chose to go the other way on that one.

    37:16-37:25

And I believe that's why Mark, when he's putting this biography of Jesus together, when he's putting this writing together, I think this is exactly why he told these stories back to back.

    37:27-37:32

If you have a faith that is reaching out towards God, here's what's going to happen.

    37:32-37:34

You're going to see awesome things!

    37:36-37:50

But Mark's like, "On the other hand, let me tell you about what happened when Jesus went back home." John 14, 21, Jesus said, "Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me.

    37:51-38:03

And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I," note this, "and I will love him and manifest myself to him." That is a promise right out of the mouth of Jesus.

    38:03-38:04

    You see what he's saying?

    38:04-38:10

He's saying that by faith when you pursue Him, He will manifest Himself to you.

    38:12-38:16

Meaning if you love your sin and have shut Jesus out, He's not going to kick the door down.

    38:19-38:21

But if you're reaching out to Him, He will manifest Himself to you.

    38:23-38:29

Like the Nazarenes, if you don't want to believe, you're not going to see much of God's hand in your life.

    38:32-38:34

    Unbelief chooses pain.

    38:37-38:40

    Unbelief chooses self-destroying sin.

    38:42-38:43

    Unbelief chooses depression.

    38:44-38:48

Unbelief chooses to walk through this life on this earth with no purpose.

    38:50-38:57

Unbelief ultimately chooses hell, chooses to be shut out from God for eternity.

    39:01-39:27

question for someone who doesn't want to believe. What is it? You don't want to be blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places? You don't want the fruit of the Spirit? You don't want love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control? That doesn't interest you at all. That's something you would choose to forfeit. You don't want to see Almighty God answer prayers and move mightily on your behalf.

    39:31-39:44

You don't want wisdom for friendship, for marriage, for parenting, for the workplace, for... you don't want the wisdom from the Eternal One as you walk through this world.

    39:46-39:47

    You don't want hope.

    39:49-39:55

You would rather resolve yourself to "this is all that there is." This is as good as it's ever going to get.

    39:57-39:58

    You don't want peace.

    40:00-40:07

You don't want the internal presence of the God who loves you to comfort you through the tragedies in life that you will face.

    40:09-40:09

    You don't want heaven.

    40:10-40:24

You would walk away from the invitation to a place that is described as being eternally in the presence of the one who loves you, where there is no more sin, there is no more death, there is no more disease, there is no more suffering.

    40:26-40:32

You can look right at God's provision of grace and walk away.

    40:34-40:34

    That is amazing.

    40:36-40:41

That is so amazing that it amazed God Himself.

    40:43-40:43

    Let's pray.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 6:1-6

  1. What is the hardest objection to the Christian faith / the Bible, in your opinion? (Evolution, what about the dinosaurs, where did Cain get his wife? etc etc).

  2. Why do people “suppress the truth in unrighteousness”? (Mark 6:12, Romans 1:18) Why is sin such a motivator to deny the truth of God?

  3. Why did Jesus “do no mighty work there” in Nazareth? (Mark 6:5) How did unbelief play a part in that? Why did He still do a few?

  4. How could Jesus “marvel” at their reaction if He already knows what is in the heart of a man? (John 2:24-25)

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another: that we be people of faith moving towards God instead of unbelief moving away from God.

Belief: Jesus Amazes

1 Corinthians 4:20 - For the Kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in POWER .

2 Corinthians 12:9 - But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my POWER is made perfect in weakness."

Ephesians 3:20 - Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think, according to the POWER at work within us.

James 5:16 - The prayer of a righteous person has great POWER as it is working.

I Want to See Jesus Move...

... so I need to HUMBLE myself. (Mk 5:21-22)

... so I need to believe that He CAN and WILL help me. (Mk 5:23-34)

... so I need to trust Him if He seems LATE . (Mk 5:35-42)

... so I need to accept things I don't UNDERSTAND. (Mk 5:43)

  • 00:00-00:06

Open up your Bibles to the Gospel according to Mark.

    00:06-00:08

We're going to be in chapter 5.

    00:08-00:09

    You have your Bibles?

    00:11-00:11

    Turn nice and loud.

    00:14-00:16

    Mark chapter 5.

    00:21-00:30

How many people remember, I don't know if they still happen, and I might be showing my age to some of the younger families here.

    00:31-00:36

How many people remember those monster truck commercials on Channel 53 when you were a kid?

    00:37-00:38

Like, how many people remember those?

    00:38-00:39

You know what I'm talking about?

    00:39-00:48

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, bigfoot, grave digger, and truckasaurus.

    00:49-00:54

$25 buys you the whole seat, but you'll only need the edge.

    00:54-00:55

    Do you remember that?

    00:58-00:59

    Thank you.

    01:00-01:01

    I remember that.

    01:02-01:05

My parents never took me to a monster truck show that I remember.

    01:06-01:07

    But I love those commercials.

    01:10-01:22

So last month, we find out through our children's speech therapist that they're having some Valentine's Day party thing at Console.

    01:24-01:26

And it was a free event.

    01:26-01:28

    Families bring your kids.

    01:28-01:30

It was like some superhero themed thing.

    01:30-01:40

And you're going to get to see-- unveiled the debut in the Pittsburgh area, the Iron Man monster truck.

    01:42-01:46

So Aaron was like, do you want to take the kids?

    01:46-01:47

    I'm like, we're going.

    01:50-01:51

    And we went.

    01:53-01:55

And so we went into console again.

    01:55-01:56

    This was a free event.

    01:56-01:57

But when you go in, they gave you a ticket.

    01:57-01:59

and there was a number on the back of the ticket.

    01:59-02:01

    And we were number one.

    02:02-02:03

    What's this number for?

    02:03-02:10

Well, they're going to call you down to the arena floor to see the Iron Man truck.

    02:11-02:14

And they're going to take you down in groups, so just listen for that group number.

    02:14-02:16

And they're like, group one, it's your turn.

    02:16-02:16

    Then you go down.

    02:17-02:27

Otherwise, we were up in the Niagara suite, where they were doing all these crafts and prizes and popcorn and all this other stuff I really wasn't interested in.

    02:27-02:29

I'm just like, I wanna see that monster truck.

    02:30-02:34

I wanna see the Iron Man monster truck smash some stuff.

    02:35-02:36

    So I was so excited.

    02:37-02:37

    Can you tell?

    02:40-02:44

So they were like, group one, you can go down to the arena floor.

    02:44-02:45

So I was like, come on, kids!

    02:45-02:47

And they're like, we're working on our craft.

    02:47-02:49

I'm like, forget it, let's go, let's go!

    02:51-02:52

    And we got down there.

    02:53-02:54

And do you know what it was?

    02:55-03:00

It was an opportunity to get your picture taken with the truck.

    03:01-03:03

    And I was like, lame.

    03:05-03:09

And they're like, well, you can get the autograph of the guy that drives it.

    03:09-03:11

Like, I don't know that guy.

    03:12-03:15

I wanna see the truck smash stuff.

    03:15-03:16

    That's why I came.

    03:16-03:17

I didn't come to look at the truck.

    03:18-03:21

I wanna see the truck smashing things.

    03:22-03:24

I did not get to see the truck smashing things.

    03:24-03:27

Do you know you have to buy a ticket and go back the next night to watch that?

    03:28-03:29

    I certainly didn't know that.

    03:30-03:37

And I thought, well, my kids had a good time, but I thought it was kind of lame that I just got to go look at it, but I didn't get to see it in action.

    03:38-04:00

Church, how lame would it be for us to perhaps look at Jesus, to sing about Jesus, be around other people who look at Jesus and sing around Jesus, but never really experience the power of Jesus.

    04:02-04:06

You know, last week we talked about the power of Jesus over the demoniac in the tombs.

    04:06-04:11

And if you were here, like, isn't that one of the craziest stories in the Bible?

    04:11-04:39

Like here's this naked demoniac sitting in the tombs gashing himself and screaming and Nobody could subdue him and then Jesus shows up and permits the demons to go into this like herd of 2,000 pigs who throw themselves into the water and drown and the man's in his right mind and everybody kind of freaks out and says, "Okay, you need to go." And we look at that like Jesus had some power, amen?

    04:40-04:41

    Jesus had some power.

    04:43-04:53

And then we read the Bible and we say things like, "Well, you know, God used to do some pretty powerful stuff. And my question, church, 2014, does he still?

    04:54-04:58

Does God still do powerful things today?

    04:59-05:11

I mean, he did like in Noah's day and Moses' day and Elijah's day and certainly Jesus' day, but does God still do pretty powerful stuff today in the church?

    05:13-05:15

Well, we're going to play a game.

    05:16-05:17

    I have some scripture verses.

    05:18-05:19

    This is a word game.

    05:19-05:21

I have some scripture verses on your outline.

    05:23-05:24

    First Corinthians 420.

    05:24-05:26

We're going to play what goes in the blank.

    05:26-05:26

    You ready?

    05:27-05:40

First Corinthians 420 says, "For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk, but in," shout it out if you know it, "power." Who said power?

    05:41-05:41

    All right.

    05:41-06:43

Matthew, well done. Power. The kingdom of God does not consist in looking at the monster truck. The kingdom of God is in the monster truck smashing things. The kingdom of God does not consist in talk, but in power. 2nd Corinthians 12 9. The flesh, and he said he prayed, and he prayed, and he prayed. And Jesus' answer to Paul was, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my blank is made perfect in weakness." What goes in the blank? Power. Ephesians 3.20, "Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think according to the blank at work within us." What goes in in the blank? Power.

    06:45-06:49

Paul says that there is power at work.

    06:50-07:05

How much power? Well, more than you can even ask for. In James 5.16, one of my favorite New Testament verses, "The prayer of a righteous person has great blank as it is working." What goes in the blank?

    07:06-07:07

    You see a theme?

    07:08-07:13

You realize today I could have given you several sheets of New Testament verses.

    07:15-07:17

You can do a search on this.

    07:18-07:21

Just do a search on what the New Testament says about the power of God.

    07:23-07:34

I had pages and pages and pages of verses that talk about God wants to display His power you and through you.

    07:36-07:42

And this is available for everyone who wants it.

    07:44-07:48

The question we're going after today is how can we see God move powerfully in our lives?

    07:49-07:54

How can we see Jesus moving powerfully in us?

    07:55-08:04

Well, the human element in the transaction of God's work is called faith.

    08:06-08:18

Actually, Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith it is impossible to please God." You can do whatever you want that you think is going to please God, make God happy.

    08:18-08:55

You can try saying certain prayers or tracking your church attendance or being nice to the old lady that lives next door or whatever. None of those things please God because according to the Hebrew writer, without faith, it's impossible to please God. Faith is what moves God or more specifically, faith is what moves us towards God. So what is faith? You know We know we use that word a lot, right?

    08:56-09:00

We use that word so much it's sort of become an abstract concept.

    09:02-09:03

We've got to keep the faith.

    09:04-09:05

    We've got to have faith.

    09:06-09:07

    Don't lose the faith.

    09:07-09:09

I have faith in the pirates this year.

    09:09-09:11

    I have faith in you.

    09:13-09:15

Okay, well what does faith even mean?

    09:15-09:20

If that's like the thing that pleases God, what does faith look like?

    09:20-09:36

In this next passage, we're going to see exactly what faith looks like, because Jesus encountered two people specifically who show us what faith looks like when it's authentic in a person's life.

    09:38-09:44

So on your outline, over these points, I want to see Jesus move.

    09:45-09:49

If you don't want to see Jesus move, I'm not sure why you're here this morning.

    09:52-10:01

But if you're someone who is not content to play church, to go through the motions, if you're somebody that's saying, "I want to see Jesus Christ moving in my life.

    10:01-10:14

I want to see things happen in my life." That the only explanation is, "That was the power of God." If that's you, we're going to see it right here in this passage, how that happens, what that looks like.

    10:15-10:17

So first of all, I want to see Jesus move.

    10:20-10:21

    Jot this down.

    10:21-10:22

So I need to humble myself.

    10:24-10:25

So I need to humble myself.

    10:25-10:26

    Look at verse 21.

    10:27-11:16

It says that when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, remember He went sort of northwest to east over to the area where the demoniac lived, and the residents asked Him to leave, so He crossed back over. It says, "A great crowd gathered about Him, and He was beside the sea." This is very familiar. We've seen this all through Mark, right? Like as soon as Jesus shows up to these Jewish people, they were just flocking and flocking to Him. He can heal. And, you know, we've seen Him do some amazing works, and nobody's ever taught like this man, and driving out demons, and once again Jesus shows up and he's crowded.

    11:18-11:25

It says, "Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name.

    11:27-11:42

And seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly." Let's pause there for a second.

    11:43-11:50

Jairus, or Jarius, depending on how your Bible has that translated, it says that he was a ruler of the synagogue.

    11:50-11:51

    What does that mean?

    11:51-11:53

Well, he wasn't a priest and he wasn't a teacher.

    11:53-11:55

    He was an administrator.

    11:56-12:00

He was, I think, in terms of a facilities manager of the synagogue.

    12:02-12:04

This guy would have been a bigwig, okay?

    12:04-12:06

This guy would have been pretty important.

    12:09-12:15

So this important facilities manager of the synagogue shows up to Jesus, and what does your Bible say?

    12:16-12:17

    Falls at his feet.

    12:19-12:23

The first step for anyone to see God at work is humility.

    12:24-12:25

    That's always the first step.

    12:27-12:29

That's the first step in coming to Jesus Christ.

    12:31-12:35

And that needs to be a first priority in your continual walk with Christ is humility.

    12:37-12:44

Because pride is always me, me, me, me, me, me, spotlight on me, attention on me, what's good for me, what's best for me.

    12:45-12:46

    That's pride.

    12:48-12:54

And some people think that humility is thinking less of yourself.

    12:55-12:58

    Like, "I'm such a loser.

    12:59-13:00

    I'm no good.

    13:00-13:01

    Nobody likes me.

    13:03-13:12

I'm terrible." Some people think, "Well, that's humility." Humility is not thinking less of yourself.

    13:12-13:15

Humility is thinking of yourself less.

    13:15-13:29

You see, the person that's constantly thinking about how terrible they are, they're just as obsessed with themselves as the prideful person because they're giving themselves too much undue attention.

    13:31-13:33

We talked about that in our depression series, right?

    13:33-13:42

Somebody that is biblically, spiritually, emotionally depressed, they say things like, "I hate myself.

    13:43-13:46

    I hate myself." That's actually a lie.

    13:47-13:47

    You love yourself.

    13:48-13:54

You love yourself so much that you're obsessed with trying to figure out how you feel about yourself.

    13:55-13:57

You're giving yourself too much attention.

    14:01-14:03

Humility is thinking of yourself less.

    14:04-14:06

It's me not in the picture.

    14:07-14:10

It's focused on Jesus Christ, first of all.

    14:11-14:16

He's focused on the needs of others second, and like where do I fit in?

    14:16-14:18

Well, I'm not even thinking about myself.

    14:20-14:21

    This man certainly displayed humility.

    14:24-14:26

He could have talked himself out of this, right?

    14:27-14:31

Like I'm the manager, I'm the manager of the synagogue, man.

    14:32-14:36

I don't go like, I don't go bowing myself to like random rabbis.

    14:37-14:40

Like, by the way, how did most of his peers feel about Jesus?

    14:41-14:43

Like thumbs up or thumbs down on Jesus?

    14:43-14:43

    Most of his peers?

    14:44-14:45

    Yeah, thumbs down.

    14:45-14:49

Like all his buddies, actually what did they say about Jesus?

    14:49-14:51

    Oh yeah, he's the devil.

    14:52-14:55

He casts out demons by the power of Beelzebul, remember that?

    14:56-14:58

That's what all of Jerry's buddies were saying about Jesus.

    14:58-15:03

And he could have talked himself out of it.

    15:04-15:05

    Note this in verse 23.

    15:08-15:10

    Humility recognizes desperation.

    15:13-15:15

    Humility recognizes desperation.

    15:15-15:23

It says, "He implored him earnestly." Humility says, "I can't do this on my own.

    15:24-15:24

    I need the Lord.

    15:25-15:29

I'm desperate and weak on my own." It's the prideful person that says, "I'm going to get this figured out.

    15:30-15:32

My daddy raised me to be self-sufficient.

    15:32-15:33

    I don't need anybody's help.

    15:34-15:36

Yeah, things are tough, but I'm going to figure it out.

    15:37-15:37

    That's pride, man.

    15:38-15:45

Humility gets to the point that you're like, I am so weak and unable to do this on my own.

    15:49-15:59

Humility wrestles you down to the point where you say, you know, He is God, and I am not.

    16:00-16:00

    Right?

    16:01-16:06

He is God and I am not.

    16:07-16:15

And you are not going to experience the power of Jesus Christ moving in your life until you humble yourself.

    16:17-16:25

If you're self-centered, if you have selfish motivations, if you're prideful, according to the Bible, the only thing that you're getting from God is opposition.

    16:25-16:25

    Did you know that?

    16:26-16:28

The Bible says God opposes the proud.

    16:29-16:32

God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

    16:33-16:36

So I want to see Jesus move first of all, so I need to humble myself.

    16:38-16:39

    This guy got it.

    16:40-16:52

Secondly, I want to see Jesus move, so I need to believe that He can and will help me.

    16:54-16:55

    Look at this next statement.

    16:58-17:06

Jairus said on his face before Jesus, "My little daughter is at the point of death.

    17:07-17:15

Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be made well and live." He went with him.

    17:17-17:19

You're like, "Well, I know how this story is going to go, right?

    17:19-17:26

Because Jesus was like healing people and casting out demons, and this guy says, 'My daughter is dying,' and Jesus goes with him.

    17:27-17:32

And it says, "And a great crowd followed Him and thronged about Him." Yeah, we kind of expect that.

    17:33-17:40

Verse 25, "And there was a woman." Let's stop right there.

    17:42-17:46

Yay, we're on our way and Jesus is going to heal my daughter.

    17:47-17:48

Get the crowd out of the way.

    17:48-17:49

Jesus is going to heal my daughter.

    17:52-17:54

And then this woman shows up.

    17:55-17:57

Don't you hate it when other people have problems?

    17:58-17:59

    Don't you just hate that?

    18:00-18:02

That so gets on my nerves.

    18:02-18:10

Like, "Man, I got problems, man." And you're like, "I got problems." I'm like, "You're interrupting my problems with your problems?

    18:12-18:18

Do you think that was a problem for Jesus?" But look at what happens, like Ninja Lady shows up.

    18:19-18:50

It says, "There was a woman who had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse." Actually, biblically, according to Leviticus 12 and 15, this woman would have been ceremonially unclean, which would have meant that she would have been a bit of an outcast.

    18:51-19:02

She wouldn't have been allowed to be around Jewish people who were wanting to maintain biblical purity.

    19:03-19:05

Just being near her, they would have been unclean.

    19:08-19:15

Notice in verse 26 it says, "She suffered much under many physicians." He's not making a commentary on like doctors, okay?

    19:16-19:20

She's just saying that she had a problem that those doctors were unable to treat.

    19:21-19:23

She suffered much and she spent all.

    19:25-19:27

We have problems like that often, don't we?

    19:29-19:31

We suffer much and we spend everything.

    19:31-19:33

    We have this problem.

    19:33-19:33

    We've tried everything.

    19:34-19:36

I have spent money that I don't have.

    19:36-19:37

I have been to every doctor.

    19:39-19:42

I've been looking for other ways to earn extra income.

    19:42-19:43

    I have talked to people.

    19:45-19:51

I know some of you can relate to this, this constant problem that I just can't seem to remedy.

    19:54-20:10

Verse 27 says, "She had heard the reports about Jesus," here's why I call her a ninja lady, "and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment." Okay, this wasn't like funny at the time, but it's funny now, and I'm sure like, if we run into this woman in heaven, we will.

    20:11-20:13

We'll, I'm sure, you know, kind of have a little laugh about that.

    20:13-20:14

But do you see this picture?

    20:14-20:36

Like there's this huge crowd around Jesus, and Jesus is trying to go to be with this little girl, and this woman's like getting through the crowd, and she's like, "If I can just, I can just touch him, "I'll be healed." And she kinda like pushes through the crowd, pushes through the crowd, and like goes up behind Jesus, and like grabs hold of his garment.

    20:38-20:49

So like what happened next, verse 29, "And immediately the flow of blood dried up, And she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.

    20:52-21:08

And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned around, excuse me, turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?" Do you have this picture?

    21:08-21:11

Huge crowd, woman sneaks up, grabs hold of Jesus' garment.

    21:12-21:14

Isn't that awesome that Jesus felt that?

    21:15-21:18

I mean, it's awesome that she had this kind of faith.

    21:18-21:19

    Just let me touch him.

    21:20-21:21

Just let me get close to him.

    21:22-21:22

    I've heard about him.

    21:22-21:25

Just if I can get close, immediately she's healed.

    21:25-21:27

But isn't it awesome that Jesus feels?

    21:29-21:36

He's not this indifferent, you know, scooping out a miracle here and scooping out a miracle there, untouched, unfeeling.

    21:37-21:38

    He felt that.

    21:41-21:43

This is kind of a humorous part of the story.

    21:44-21:46

I really believe there's a lot of humor in the Bible.

    21:46-21:49

I think you just have to look for it, you know?

    21:51-22:09

This is kind of funny because there's this huge crowd and Jesus and the disciples, you have the picture, they're going to Jairus' house and all of a sudden Jesus stops and he's like, "Who touched me?" What's the answer to that question, logically?

    22:10-22:27

While the disciples speak up, his disciples said to him, verse 31, "You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, 'Who touched me?'" The disciples were like, "Who touched you, Jesus?

    22:27-22:30

    How about everybody?" Right?

    22:31-22:36

I mean, not to be rude, we're pretty much in the middle of a mob.

    22:37-22:38

This is like a mosh pit.

    22:39-22:43

And you're like, "Who touched me?" Just shout out a name, Jesus.

    22:43-22:45

    That person probably touched you.

    22:48-23:00

Well, verse 32, "And He looked around to see who had done it." Jesus wasn't like content with their questioning.

    23:00-23:07

He was like, "No, somebody touched me." How many people think that Jesus already knew on.

    23:08-23:33

You know when God asks a question, He's not looking for information, right? You did know that. Like in the Garden of Eden, God's like, "Adam, where are you?" Like, "Hide and seek champion." Adam's like, "Yes! He'll never find me here." When God asks a question, He's not looking for information. What's He looking for? He's looking for a confession.

    23:36-23:38

He's looking to draw you in.

    23:40-23:44

Ok, so Jesus is like, "Who touched Me?" And He's looking around to see who had done it.

    23:45-23:47

So if you're the woman, what are you thinking at this point?

    23:49-23:52

    Like, "Oh man, He knows.

    23:52-23:54

    He knows.

    23:55-23:56

    He knows.

    23:56-23:56

    He knows.

    23:57-23:57

    He knows.

    23:58-23:58

    He knows.

    24:00-24:17

But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, and fear and trembling and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth." She just comes up and falls before Jesus and she's like, "It was me." She was trembling.

    24:17-24:18

    "It was me.

    24:19-24:20

    I've had this disease.

    24:21-24:34

I heard about you and I knew if I could just touch you, I knew if I could just touch you, this disease that I have suffered with for 12 years, I knew you would be my only hope.

    24:36-24:46

And as soon as I touched you, I was healed." And He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well.

    24:48-25:03

Go in peace and be healed of your disease." This is the only time in the Bible recorded that Jesus refers to someone as "daughter." Do you see the tenderness there? Do you see the compassion?

    25:07-25:21

Literally, your Bible might say, "Your faith has made you well." Literally, in the Greek, this is translated, "Your faith has saved you." There is more happening here than a disease being healed.

    25:21-25:23

This was a soul being saved.

    25:25-25:27

I want to see Jesus move.

    25:30-25:37

So I need to believe that He can and will help me.

    25:39-25:41

Do you believe that God can help you?

    25:42-25:48

How many people would say, "I believe that God can help me." Do you believe that God will help you?

    25:50-25:52

How many people believe that God is willing to help a person?

    25:54-25:56

I expected that, but here's the hard question.

    25:59-26:04

Do you believe that God will help you?

    26:06-26:07

This is where you have to personalize.

    26:08-26:10

Do you believe that God will help you?

    26:11-26:52

I don't know why it is, but I'm more apt to believe sometimes that God is much more likely to move in the life of a John Piper or a Billy Graham or a Francis Chan or, in certain name of favorite preacher. There's something in me that's like, yeah, God's really moving in their lives. Do I believe that God wants to move like that in my own life? That's where it really hits, right? This lady heard the reports about Jesus, so she was like, He can, he can help.

    26:55-26:59

But she made it so personal, she's like, "I know he can help me, I just got to get close enough to touch him.

    27:00-27:05

So will God help me?" And really, that's the whole point of the passage.

    27:06-27:12

Because when you compare Jairus and this woman, it's quite a comparison, isn't it?

    27:14-27:16

    Jairus is mentioned by name.

    27:18-27:20

This woman, we don't even know what her name is.

    27:23-27:24

Jairus would have been very wealthy.

    27:27-27:28

Bible tells us this woman was bankrupt.

    27:31-27:33

Jairus was concerned about a 12 year old daughter.

    27:34-27:37

This woman was concerned about a 12 year old disease.

    27:39-27:41

So that's what we see in this passage.

    27:41-27:55

Whether you are facilities manager of local synagogue, esteemed in the eyes of the public, Or whether you're this poor sick woman who's been a bit of an outcast for the last 12 years.

    27:57-27:59

Where is Jesus more likely to be at work?

    28:01-28:02

    The answer is both places.

    28:02-28:03

    Amen?

    28:03-28:28

You see, in Jesus' mind, in the very heart of God, there isn't a distinction between people, except for one. There's one distinction. There are people that reach out to Him by faith, and there are people who refuse to reach out to Him by faith. That's it.

    28:28-28:35

No matter how much money you make, or where you work, or what color your skin is, or what family you come from, or whatever.

    28:38-28:39

    Those things don't matter.

    28:41-29:10

What matters is, do you have the faith that He can and He will help you? God's looking at the heart. People to humbly come believing that He will show Himself gloriously. I want to see Jesus move, so I need to humble myself, so I need to believe that He can and will help me. Write this down. So I need to trust Him if He seems late.

    29:12-29:31

Okay, so you have the thing with the woman with the disease and like touching the garments and confession time. Oh yeah, anybody remember the sick little girl? I had a little interruption there. It says, verse 35, "While he was still speaking." How long did this transaction take?

    29:31-29:34

I mean, did it take a few minutes?

    29:34-29:35

    Did it take an hour?

    29:35-29:35

Did it take a couple hours?

    29:36-29:37

We don't know, but it took some time.

    29:39-29:49

While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house, from Jairus' house, some who said, "Your daughter is dead.

    29:51-30:01

Why trouble the teacher any further?" Let's just pause here and acknowledge that sometimes God seems late.

    30:04-30:05

So many times we face this, right?

    30:08-30:20

This desperate need has shown up in your life and you're like, "I am taking this to the Lord and I'm trusting Him for big things and things look good." Right?

    30:23-30:25

And then things quickly go south.

    30:27-30:34

And we're like, "I thought God was going to do something." And the bottom fell out.

    30:35-30:36

That's what happened to Jairus, right?

    30:36-30:38

Like Jesus is going to my house and He's going to heal my daughter.

    30:39-30:43

And then like the interruption with the woman, and then they're like, "Your daughter's dead, man.

    30:45-30:51

Don't trouble the teacher anymore." I've always gone through Jairus' mind, let's be honest.

    30:54-31:00

Is it possible he was thinking if it wasn't for that stupid woman, my daughter would still be alive?

    31:00-31:03

I don't know, the Bible doesn't say what he was thinking, but put yourself in his shoes, right?

    31:03-31:05

That's probably what I'd be thinking.

    31:06-31:12

Like, "I had Jesus on the way to my house and this woman just shows up and totally bogarts my time.

    31:12-31:15

I was first." I like had a number, man.

    31:15-31:16

    Take a number.

    31:16-31:18

I was one, you were two.

    31:19-31:23

And like now, now we're too late.

    31:25-31:27

And that happens so often to us.

    31:28-31:33

Things start to look good, things look like they're heading in the right direction, and then the bottom falls out and we're like, now what?

    31:35-31:42

And listen, faith has to overcome that obstacle.

    31:43-31:44

    You're like, what obstacle?

    31:44-31:49

You see, what do I do when it looks like everything went south?

    31:50-31:52

When I was trusting God to deliver.

    31:52-31:56

Your faith has to overcome that obstacle, because it's going to happen.

    31:56-32:02

It's happened to many of you in your lives, and if it hasn't, it's going to.

    32:05-32:07

But your faith has to overcome that obstacle.

    32:09-32:36

verse 36, "But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, 'Do not fear, only believe.'" I don't know whatever Jairus was thinking before this point, but I wonder what that statement from Jesus did when Jesus just turns and says, "Don't be afraid.

    32:39-32:39

    believe.

    32:41-32:50

You're going to get your answer. You are going to get your answer.

    32:51-33:28

Even if God seems late, even if things look good and the bottom fell out, you're going to get your answer. What was Jairus' answer? Look at verse 37, it says, "And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly." Like, what's going on there? In our culture, when you go into the funeral home, it's like quiet, right? You walk in and it's just, there might be soft organ music playing.

    33:33-33:35

    Everybody's Very respectful.

    33:36-33:42

And that's our culture, but you know what a first century Jewish funeral was like?

    33:43-33:45

    It was loud.

    33:46-33:49

They put a premium on loud just like we put a premium on quiet.

    33:49-33:51

I know it sounds crazy to us, but it's true.

    33:51-33:53

    They would actually hire wailers.

    33:53-33:54

    Did you know that?

    33:54-34:00

There were people, that was their job, was they would get paid to show up at a funeral and scream.

    34:02-34:28

where do I sign up for that?" Right? And they'd hire flute players and it was always this really, really big commotion. So, picture this scene, you know, Jairus' house and all these people are just like wailing and screaming and Jesus walks in, verse 39, "And when he had entered, he said to them, 'Why are you making a commotion and weeping?

    34:32-34:34

    The But sleeping?

    34:37-34:37

    Seriously?

    34:38-34:45

I mean, could you imagine Jesus walking into a funeral home today and people were standing around like sobbing quietly.

    34:46-34:49

In our day, Jesus would say, "Why is everybody so quiet?

    34:50-34:54

She's just sleeping." Here Jesus was like, "Whoa, whoa, whoa, what's all the commotion?

    34:55-35:03

She's just sleeping." In verse 40 it says, "And they laughed at him." Oh, the world laughs at Jesus.

    35:03-35:10

Oh, this idea that you're the expert on life and death and they laughed at him.

    35:11-35:17

And biblically it literally translates, "They laughed to scorn." Okay?

    35:17-35:21

It wasn't like, "Oh Jesus, we think you're funny." This was a mocking laughter.

    35:21-35:27

This was like, "Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha This was mocking Jesus.

    35:28-35:29

Oh, no, do you hear this guy?

    35:29-35:31

    Oh, she's sleeping, she's sleeping.

    35:31-35:32

    Do you hear this guy?

    35:33-35:37

That was the kind of laughter, laughter scorn.

    35:38-35:43

It says, "But he put them all outside." You gotta love when Jesus shows up to a funeral.

    35:45-35:46

Actually, I believe it's in Matthew's account of this.

    35:46-35:48

    He literally tells them out.

    35:48-35:50

He just shows up to the funeral and is like, "Out.

    35:50-35:53

"We're trying to have a funeral, get out." There's the door.

    35:54-36:05

He put them all outside and he took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, who was that? Peter, James and John, and went into where the child was.

    36:07-36:23

Taking her by the hand, he said to her, "Talitha humi," which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." That talitha literally translates little lamb, right?

    36:24-36:26

    Little lamb, get up.

    36:29-36:32

And immediately the girl got up and began walking.

    36:34-36:35

For she was 12 years of age.

    36:36-36:40

And they were immediately overcome with amazement.

    36:44-36:45

You're going to get your answer.

    36:48-36:54

You need to trust, even if He seems like you're going to get your answer, but listen, answer does not mean God does my bidding.

    36:56-37:07

That's the problem. We think answered prayer means I put in this very specific request and God meets everything on my list and that's not what it means for God to answer prayer.

    37:11-37:19

It's "Thy will be done," not "My will be done." Answered means that God shows up.

    37:19-37:21

That's what it means when God answers prayer.

    37:21-37:24

It means He shows up and reveals Himself gloriously.

    37:24-37:27

    And sometimes He heals instantly.

    37:28-37:30

Like He did with this girl.

    37:30-37:33

Like other stories I can tell you.

    37:34-37:39

People that I know that have experienced instantaneous healing because of prayer, because of the power of God.

    37:39-37:40

    I've seen it.

    37:41-37:43

    Sometimes He heals instantly.

    37:43-37:47

Sometimes He seems to delay, seems to delay in healing.

    37:48-37:54

Sometimes what He chooses to do is show His glory in the midst of it.

    37:56-37:58

Many of you know our story.

    38:00-38:06

We, with our children, we weren't facing a 12-year issue, okay?

    38:06-38:10

We've been, we're only in a nine-year issue so far.

    38:12-38:29

And I can't tell you over the years concerning the health and development of our children, I can't tell you how much we have prayed, how much we have fasted, all the doctors we've been to.

    38:29-38:55

We catch wind of a doctor saying, "Hey, new breakthrough in autism." And next thing you know, we're loading up the car and driving and spending money we didn't have, seeing two steps forward followed by five steps backwards, and we're like, what's he doing?

    38:56-38:57

    What's God doing?

    38:58-38:59

I mean, He answers prayer, right?

    39:01-39:05

So why isn't He answering this one?

    39:07-39:25

I think often of a woman that I know that had a very sick husband, and she prayed and fasted for his healing, prayed and prayed and prayed, and he died.

    39:26-39:39

And this woman actually went to a friend of mine, very angry with God, and this friend of mine, very wise man, he's like, "Why are you angry with God?" He said, "Because I trusted God to heal my husband.

    39:40-39:53

You know, I prayed and I prayed and I trusted God to heal him." This friend of mine said, "Well, where is your husband now?" And she goes, "Well, he was a believer.

    39:53-40:03

He's in heaven." And my friend said, "Do you think he's healed now?" You see, true faith looks at things biblically.

    40:04-40:05

    It's the big picture.

    40:07-40:10

It's not over even if it seems over.

    40:12-40:18

But true faith doesn't give up at the first sign of God, not doing what I want, when I want.

    40:20-40:24

You need to trust God even if He seems late, because God sees the big picture and we do not.

    40:26-40:30

And finally, I want to see Jesus move.

    40:34-40:37

"Oh, I need to accept things I don't understand." Look at verse 43.

    40:40-40:41

You have this scene in your head.

    40:42-40:43

Jesus shows up at a funeral.

    40:46-40:47

    Everybody laughs at him.

    40:47-40:48

    He throws everybody out.

    40:49-40:51

He raises a girl from the dead.

    40:53-40:55

And honestly, this next verse, I'm just like, "I don't get this.

    40:55-41:05

I just, I don't get it." It says, "And he strictly charged them that no one should know this and told them to give her something to eat.

    41:06-41:08

    I don't get that.

    41:10-41:14

But I wanna see Jesus move, so I need to accept things I don't understand.

    41:15-41:18

What would be your knee-jerk reaction if this was your 12-year-old daughter?

    41:19-41:25

This was your 12-year-old daughter, and Jesus just came into your house and raised her from the dead, what would you do?

    41:25-41:32

I know the first thing you'd do, you'd be like, "Come here, daughter." Be like, "Selfie!" Like, all right, we're putting this on Facebook, okay?

    41:34-41:44

Jesus came to our house today and rose our daughter from the dead and you'd be on the phone, you'd be telling everybody that would sit still long enough.

    41:47-41:58

And Jesus says, "No one should know about this." Actually, he did that a lot when you study through the Gospels.

    41:58-42:11

There are many, many times Jesus performed a miracle, and then the first thing he says is, "Don't tell anybody about this." Church, do we know the reason why?

    42:14-42:15

Tell me, do we know the reason why?

    42:17-42:20

Don't be shy. Do we know the reason why?

    42:21-42:21

    No.

    42:23-42:24

    Did Jesus have a reason?

    42:26-42:26

    Yes.

    42:27-42:29

If God had wanted us to know the reason, would He have told us?

    42:31-42:31

    Yes.

    42:34-42:35

    Do we need to know?

    42:37-42:37

    Apparently not.

    42:39-42:41

Faith says I'm okay with not knowing.

    42:42-42:45

Faith says I obey God's Word even if I don't understand.

    42:48-42:53

Because He is God and I am not.

    42:53-42:54

    Let's pray.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 5:21-43

  1. Can you come to Jesus without humbling yourself? Why or why not? How exactly do you humble yourself?

  2. Why did Jesus tell the woman her faith made her well (lit. saved her, verse 34)? What was the substance of her faith?

  3. How would you define “answered prayer”? What does “an answer to prayer” mean? How do you know when a prayer has been answered?

Breakout Questions:

  1. What is something you have prayed for that “the Lord has seemed late in answering”? (Mk 4:35) Why do you think He hasn’t answered your prayer in the way that you wanted? What is your response going to be?

  2. Pray for the upcoming Franklin Graham Crusade and our church’s involvement in it. If we are to be involved, we need the Lord to raise up a leader who will help get us plugged in. This is a tremendous evangelism opportunity!

Demons: Agents of the Enemy

Three Displays of Power:

  1. Evil has the power to DESTROY. (Mk 5:1-7)

  2. The Abyss (read): Luke 8:31, 1 Peter 3:19-20, 2 Peter 2:4, Jude 6-7, Revelation 9:1, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1, 3

Ephesians 6:12 - For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

  3. Jesus has the power to DELIVER. (Mk 5:8-15)

  4. Jesus has the power to DIVIDE. (Mk 5:16-20)

Open up your Bibles to the Gospel of Mark, chapter 5.

    00:07-00:27

While you're turning there, last week, if you were here, we talked about the account where Jesus and the disciples were crossing the sea, and remember the storm came up, the hurricane came up, and where was Jesus?

    00:30-00:32

And what were the disciples doing?

    00:33-00:35

    Freaking, right, freaking out.

    00:36-00:38

That was the exact word that I was thinking.

    00:40-00:41

That scares me a little bit, Jay.

    00:45-00:46

Last week we talked about fear.

    00:49-00:57

Picking up on that theme, I want to talk about fear as we go into Mark chapter 5, because this is still the theme, okay?

    00:58-01:00

This is another passage about fear.

    01:03-01:09

You're like, "Pastor Jeff, do you have any fears besides sharks?" And I do.

    01:11-01:15

I have a huge fear for this church.

    01:17-01:21

And it's a fear that you should have for yourself.

    01:23-01:30

You know, 2 Timothy chapter 3 verse 5 talks about a form of godliness but denying its power.

    01:32-01:50

And as a pastor, one of the greatest fears that I carry is that we would be a church can conduct business without seeing God's power at work.

    01:53-02:07

I mean we can be friendly, we can have a structure, and we can have programs, and we can have talented musicians, and we can have good teachers, and we can do all of these things without actually seeing God's power.

    02:10-02:12

But please don't take this as a panic button.

    02:13-02:14

    We have seen God's power.

    02:16-02:17

We've seen God's power in provision.

    02:18-02:23

I could tell you stories again and again when we didn't have it, but God provided it.

    02:25-02:36

I could tell you stories of people who have come to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ in this church and through this ministry, and marriages saved, and God at work in the hearts of people.

    02:38-02:43

Over and over and over in the young life of this church, we have seen God's power at work.

    02:44-02:55

So understand when I say I have this fear, my fear is to slip into autopilot and to try to carry out the work in our own power.

    02:56-03:09

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the power of God, and it is about the one who has all power, And it is about the one who displays his power.

    03:11-03:16

And that last phrase might be where we deviate in this room.

    03:17-03:24

If I said, "Do you believe the gospel of Jesus Christ is God's power?" Most of us would say, "Yeah." Probably all of us.

    03:24-03:54

"Do you believe that God has all power?" "Yeah." power, there are going to be some people in this room that say, "Yes, He does." And there are going to be some people in this room that say, "I'm not so sure about that." The truth is that the Lord never changes.

    03:56-04:20

that God is just as powerful today as He was when He spoke the world into existence, as He was when He led the Israelites out of Egypt, as He was when He walked on this earth as a man, and as He will be when He returns.

    04:23-04:25

God is a God of power.

    04:27-04:34

And God is about displaying His power mightily among His people.

    04:34-04:36

So you're like, "Okay, you're talking about power.

    04:37-04:45

Okay, what do you mean by power?" I'm so glad that you asked because in Mark chapter 5, do you have your sermon outline?

    04:46-04:49

Mark chapter 5 is really about three displays of power.

    04:50-04:55

The first one is this, write this down, number one, evil has the power to destroy.

    04:56-05:05

Okay before we talk about God's power, we have to acknowledge that there is another power at work in this world.

    05:05-05:10

There is another power very active right now in this world, and it is the power of evil.

    05:13-05:15

And evil has the power to destroy.

    05:16-05:17

    Look at verse 1.

    05:18-05:20

    Remember the context?

    05:21-05:24

Jesus said, "We're going to the other side." Storm.

    05:25-05:25

    Jesus sleeping.

    05:26-05:27

    Disciples freaking out.

    05:27-05:28

    Jesus calms the storm.

    05:29-05:32

He says to the disciples, "Why are you so afraid?

    05:33-05:37

Have you still no faith?" Disciples terrified of Jesus.

    05:38-06:05

1 and chapter 5 says, "They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes." Now this would have been a path going from the northwest of the Sea of Galilee, traveling east about a six-mile journey, around the curve, landing in Gentile country.

    06:08-06:14

Now, if you can imagine the disciples, put yourself in the place of the disciples here for a second.

    06:16-06:19

You were just in a canoe during a hurricane.

    06:20-06:25

Okay, it was a little bigger than a canoe, it probably seated about 15 or 20 people, but it wasn't the Carnival cruise ship, okay?

    06:26-06:31

So you're in this little boat with Jesus, through a hurricane, and you land on the other side.

    06:31-06:32

What's the first thing you do?

    06:33-06:34

    Like kiss the ground, right?

    06:35-06:36

    Anybody else with me?

    06:37-06:42

Like, "Ha, ha, ha." Yeah, still a little shaky from the hurricane thing.

    06:43-06:45

The next thing I'm thinking is coffee.

    06:45-06:45

    How about you?

    06:47-06:50

    Well, look at verse 2.

    06:51-07:16

It says, "And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit." Jesus steps out of the boat, and as soon as He steps out of the boat, the welcome committee shows up.

    07:18-07:23

The Gerasenes apparently had an assimilation ministry that this was how they greeted people.

    07:26-07:27

    No, not exactly.

    07:29-07:32

The Bible says that He had an unclean spirit or a demon.

    07:32-07:34

I want to talk about demons for a second.

    07:36-07:42

To paraphrase C.S. Lewis, he said, "We can have two wrong extremes when it comes to the demonic.

    07:44-07:47

We can be obsessed with them or we can deny them." Right?

    07:47-07:48

    Those are the extremes.

    07:49-07:53

There are some people that are like, "Ah, demons, I don't believe that." You better.

    07:56-07:57

God's Word talks about it even today.

    07:57-07:58

We'll get to that in a second.

    07:59-08:02

But then there are some people that are looking for a demon behind everything.

    08:03-08:21

You know, little Jimmy's got the sniffles, and it's like, "He's got the cold demon." And you know, your boss yells at you at work, "My boss has a demon!" And like everybody and everything, you know, "My car won't start," you know, "My carburetor has a demon!" And both of those extremes are wrong.

    08:23-08:24

    Are demons active today?

    08:26-08:26

    Yes, they are.

    08:28-08:38

And I'll be honest with you as a pastor, it is often hard to discern what is mental illness and what is demonic.

    08:41-08:52

I have met several people in my ministry that I have really wondered if they had a demon.

    08:53-08:53

    True.

    08:56-09:22

making light. We had this guy that used to, he was one of those guys, I guarantee you right this minute he's walking around downtown Butler, but he would often stop into the office and just want to talk. And he told me about this secret song of the tribes of Israel that he discovered in the Bible, and he sang it for me. And then he told me about these documents that he needed mailed to the president.

    09:26-09:36

I've had a lot of long and very interesting conversations with this man, and I've often wondered is he mentally ill, or does he have a demon?

    09:38-09:40

    It's hard to discern.

    09:42-09:43

    What is a demon?

    09:43-09:45

    Well, demons are actually angels.

    09:46-09:57

Specifically, the Bible tells us that a third of the angels rebelled against God, led by Satan, and God cast them out of heaven.

    09:57-09:59

    That's in Revelation 12, 4.

    10:00-10:02

They are agents of the enemy.

    10:02-10:13

Okay, so God has His angels, and Satan has his demons, but God is still sovereign over satanic and demonic activity.

    10:13-10:15

And I'm going to say that again because that is so important.

    10:16-10:21

God is still sovereign over demonic and satanic activity.

    10:23-10:26

    Demons ultimately do God's purpose.

    10:28-10:33

We talked about this last month, remember, in our series on depression when we spent some time in the book of Job.

    10:35-10:41

Satan's desire was to afflict and destroy and have Job abandon his faith.

    10:42-10:51

And that was the very thing that God used in Job's life to draw him closer to God.

    10:53-10:55

I don't always understand how that works.

    10:55-10:57

It doesn't matter if I understand how it works.

    10:57-10:58

God never told me to understand Him.

    10:59-11:00

God has called me to trust Him.

    11:02-11:19

So when the Bible says that God even uses demons to accomplish His purposes, all I can say is, "God uses demons to accomplish His purposes." I know of several instances, even in Scripture, where the Bible talks about that. He does.

    11:22-11:42

Well, with the storm, Jesus showed His power over the natural, but what we're about to see here in this passage is Jesus showed His power over the supernatural. You're like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, I was here before when we talked about Jesus casting out demons." Yeah, that was nothing like compared to what's coming up in this passage here.

    11:44-11:49

This account in Mark chapter 5, it's also in Luke chapter 8, it's in Matthew chapter 8.

    11:52-12:01

There was nothing else in the ministry of Jesus like this, and there's not going to be anything else like this until after the tribulation.

    12:04-12:10

The Bible says Jesus stepped out of the boat and immediately there met Him, excuse me, out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

    12:11-12:15

Verse 3 says He lived among the tombs.

    12:16-12:17

    What's that all about?

    12:17-12:21

Well, when we think of the tombs, we think of a modern day graveyard.

    12:23-12:26

But these tombs would have been little caves that were carved into the hill.

    12:27-12:32

Actually, you can travel to this area today and still see these tombs.

    12:33-12:38

They're cut into the hill, these little caves, and this man lived there.

    12:40-12:47

When you compare this account with Matthew's account and with Luke's account, they give some more details.

    12:50-12:54

Matthew tells us that people were afraid to travel through that area because of this man.

    12:55-12:59

Anybody else like, "Yeah, that's not the neighborhood I would go to," that would totally be me.

    13:00-13:02

Luke also tells us that the man was naked.

    13:04-13:05

Could you imagine how terrifying that was?

    13:06-13:08

Like don't go near the cemetery.

    13:08-13:09

    Why?

    13:10-13:12

Because the naked maniac lives there.

    13:13-13:15

People were scared to death of this man.

    13:18-13:22

They're like, "Well, surely somebody would have tried to do something about him." Not true.

    13:23-13:37

Look at verse 3, "And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart and he broke the shackles in pieces.

    13:37-13:41

No one had the strength to subdue him.

    13:44-13:52

We live in a day where if somebody is mentally ill or seems to be mentally ill, we have medication for that.

    13:52-13:54

    We have mind-numbing drugs.

    13:54-13:59

But understand, it wasn't too long ago in history before the mind-numbing drugs.

    13:59-14:03

What did we do with people who were apparently mentally ill?

    14:04-14:06

Straight jacket and padded room, right?

    14:06-14:07

    That's just throughout history.

    14:07-14:08

    That's always been the way.

    14:08-14:10

We don't know what to do with this guy.

    14:10-14:13

He's obviously harmful to himself, and he's obviously a danger to others.

    14:14-14:19

So we'll just tie him up and put him in a room where hopefully no one gets hurt.

    14:20-14:22

Mark is telling us, "Yeah, they tried that.

    14:23-14:24

They tried to bind this guy.

    14:25-14:35

They tried to put the straitjacket on the guy, but this guy was such a monster that every time they bound him, he just ripped out of him like Superman.

    14:37-14:52

Look at verse 5, it says, "Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains, he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones." OK, scale of 1 to 10, how scary was this guy?

    14:53-14:57

One being kitten, ten being scared to death of this guy.

    14:59-15:00

    Ten?

    15:01-15:01

    All in favor of ten?

    15:02-15:03

    Yeah, that's me.

    15:03-15:04

    Could you imagine this?

    15:04-15:13

Okay, so there's this naked guy that lives in the tombs, and day and night, if you got close enough to listen, you could hear the guy screaming out.

    15:16-15:19

If you could get close enough to get a look at him, what was he doing?

    15:19-15:29

He was taking stones and cutting himself, just ripping his flesh from his own body as he sits among the tombs naked.

    15:31-15:32

    This is absolutely terrifying.

    15:34-15:45

And then you have Jesus who says to His disciples, "We have to go to the other side." And this guy was why.

    15:47-15:59

Look at verse 6, it says, "And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before Him." Like, well, how did he recognize Jesus?

    16:00-16:02

I don't believe the man recognized Jesus at all.

    16:02-16:06

I believe the demons recognized Jesus because the Word was out.

    16:09-16:11

I don't know how demons communicate.

    16:11-16:17

I don't know if they were sending each other emails or text messages, AOL, instant messenger.

    16:17-16:20

I don't know how they were communicating, probably not AOL.

    16:20-16:31

I don't know how they were communicating with each other, but word was out that God was walking around on the earth casting out demons.

    16:32-16:46

So these demons recognized Jesus, like, "Wow, it seems like there was a lot of demonic activity in Jesus' day." Yeah, it does seem that way because Jesus drew them out, you see.

    16:47-16:55

That's why you see so much demonic activity, because when these demons saw Jesus, they were terrified.

    16:57-16:58

    Terrified!

    17:00-17:06

Look at verse 7, it says, "And crying out with a loud voice." We talked about this previously, didn't we?

    17:07-17:12

Every time a demon encounters Jesus, the Bible always says they cried out with a loud voice.

    17:12-17:13

    What does that mean?

    17:13-17:16

We actually had Jay Naur demonstrate this last time, do you remember?

    17:19-17:21

They were crying out in absolute terror.

    17:23-17:23

    Okay?

    17:23-17:30

Like, you know the sound that you would make if you stepped into the shower and saw like a big hairy spider?

    17:31-17:32

You know the sound you would make?

    17:34-17:35

    Imagine that times a billion.

    17:37-17:41

These demons were scared to death to be in the presence of Jesus Christ.

    17:43-18:00

Look at what the demon said through the man, again crying out, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?" What's that all about?

    18:04-18:16

Well, in Matthew's account, he records a little bit more of the conversation, and Matthew Matthew includes this phrase in Matthew chapter 8, the phrase "before the time." Like Jesus, what are you doing here before the time?

    18:16-18:17

    What does that mean?

    18:17-18:23

These demons knew that someday God was going to judge them for their rebellion.

    18:27-18:31

And these demons knew that according to God's calendar, this wasn't the time.

    18:32-18:50

So they're like, "Jesus, what are you doing here now?" That's what they were saying when they cried out, "What have you to do with me, Jesus?" Or to put it in a modern context, imagine you're at work and your boss leaves, and you're staying after hours to work.

    18:52-18:54

But instead of working, you're just kind of goofing off.

    18:55-19:04

And maybe you're goofing off and misusing some of the materials of the company, and then your boss walks back in.

    19:05-19:06

    And what do you say?

    19:07-19:10

What are you doing here?" And he's like, "I work here.

    19:10-19:17

What are you doing here?" With that concept of, "What are you doing here?" That's what these demons were saying to Jesus.

    19:17-19:19

    "What are you doing here?

    19:22-19:31

What are you going to do with us?" And then they say, "I adjure you by God." This is just like flat-out begging.

    19:32-20:23

his face, begging, "Do not torment me." Luke chapter 8 says that they were begging not to be sent to the abyss. Luke chapter 8 verse 31, they begged, "Please don't send us to the abyss." You're like, "Well, what is the abyss?" Did you know that there's actually a prison for demons. Did you know that? All through the Bible actually we see this. 1 Peter 3 verses 19-20, 2 Peter 2 verse 4, Jude verses 6-7, 4 times in the book of Revelation, Revelation 9-1, Revelation 11-7, Revelation 17-8, Revelation chapter 20 verses 1 and 3.

    20:24-20:37

The Bible talks about this prison for demons, that there are certain demons that are so vile, even going back to the days of Genesis chapter 6, that God imprisoned these demons.

    20:40-20:47

And these demons were crying out, "Please, don't send us there.

    20:49-20:51

    We know about the prison.

    20:52-21:04

We know that you have this place of eternal chains, the Bible calls it, this place for demons where you lock us up.

    21:05-21:08

    Please don't send us there.

    21:13-21:41

And you and I come and we say, "Well, why not send them to the pit?" back to what I said earlier. Apparently Jesus has a reason for not doing it now. Do you think Jesus had the power to send them to the pit right then and there? Absolutely He did. But He didn't. He must have had a reason. And I would also add, there is going to come a day, that He's going to deal with them once and for all.

    21:45-21:46

    Do not torment me.

    21:47-21:49

So yes, demonic power is real.

    21:50-21:56

Yes, Satan and his agents are still in the business of destruction in church.

    21:58-22:08

Yes, if we are going to see God at work, we have to wrestle forces of evil and the power of Jesus.

    22:13-22:15

Ephesians 6.12, I have it on your outline, but look at that with me.

    22:16-22:44

Ephesians 6.12, the Apostle Paul tells the church in Ephesus this reminder, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil and the heavenly places." So if you think as a church that our greatest conflict is going to be from some person of influence, you're wrong.

    22:45-22:47

The Bible tells us our conflict is spiritual.

    22:49-22:52

There's a real spiritual war happening right now.

    22:54-22:56

Evil has the power to destroy.

    22:59-23:03

Secondly, good news, Jesus has the power to deliver.

    23:06-23:08

Jesus has the power to deliver.

    23:08-23:09

    Look at verse 8.

    23:11-23:41

For he was saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit." And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Legion, for we are many." And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.

    23:42-23:45

There's some significance in that name "legion." What is a legion?

    23:45-23:47

Well, it was a group of soldiers, actually.

    23:48-23:53

A legion could consist of up to 6,000 Roman soldiers.

    23:54-24:02

And apparently, you'll see why here in a minute, apparently this man had up to 2,000 demons inside of him.

    24:06-24:29

commentators say, "Well, they were just trying to intimidate Jesus here." Like, "What's your name?" Like, "We're Legion. There's like 2,000 of us." Like, "What is that to Jesus?" You think Jesus was scared? As scared as you would be of 2,000 ants, okay?

    24:30-25:11

They're like, "Believe me, they weren't trying to intimidate Jesus. You know what doing?" Jesus said, "What's your name?" And they were saying, "Sir, Legion, Sir." That's what they were doing, scared to death. "Our name is Legion, for we are many." And then, interestingly, they said, "Don't send us out of the country," verse 10. They begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country. Why did they want to stay there? I don't know.

    25:13-25:27

Apparently that was their territory and they wanted to stay in their territory. And they begged Jesus, "Let us just stay here. Don't send us out of the country." This is where story gets absolutely crazy.

    25:29-25:30

    Everybody with me so far?

    25:31-25:52

Verse 11 says, "Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him saying, 'Send us to the pigs, let us enter them.'" Isn't that like the weirdest request?

    25:53-26:06

Jesus is like, "Get out of the man," and they're like, "We don't want to leave the country, and please don't torment us." "Put us in the pigs." If that wasn't mind-blowing enough, look at verse 13.

    26:06-26:12

It says, "So he gave them permission." Jesus said, "You want in the pigs?

    26:15-26:16

    Okay." He gave them permission.

    26:17-26:27

The unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs, and the herd, numbering about 2,000, They rushed down this deep bank into the sea and were drowned into the sea.

    26:29-26:37

The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country and people came to see what it was that had happened.

    26:39-26:41

So I don't know what you did the last week.

    26:42-26:43

Do you want to know what I did?

    26:44-26:52

I asked myself repeatedly, "What is up with the pigs?" And here's the best answer that I could come up with.

    26:53-26:53

    You ready for this?

    26:54-26:54

    Write this down.

    26:55-26:56

    Anybody need a pencil?

    26:56-27:01

Here's the best answer for what happened to the pigs, or what's up with the pigs rather.

    27:01-27:01

    We know what happened.

    27:01-27:02

    What's up with the pigs?

    27:02-27:03

    Here's the answer.

    27:04-27:05

    I don't know.

    27:06-27:09

Further, I don't know if anyone other than Jesus knows.

    27:13-27:14

This raises a lot of questions.

    27:15-27:16

    Can animals be possessed?

    27:19-27:20

    Apparently the answer is yes.

    27:21-27:23

Does anybody here have a cat?

    27:25-27:27

It's not going to be a hard sell for you.

    27:29-27:31

But apparently animals can be possessed.

    27:33-27:37

Demons can somehow dominate their brains and their behaviors.

    27:38-27:45

Interestingly in the text we don't see anybody complaining about the pigs, nor do we see here in a second anybody rejoicing over the man.

    27:45-27:47

You know I was thinking about this this week.

    27:48-27:53

If this like happened today, what would be in the news?

    27:55-28:02

If this account happened today, and you got on CNN.com to read about it, what would it say?

    28:02-28:03

Do we have that picture of the pig?

    28:05-28:08

If this happened today, here's exactly what would happen.

    28:09-28:26

you turn on your TV, watching the Olympics, it would go to commercial break, and this picture would come on your TV screen, and Sarah McLachlan would start singing.

    28:28-28:29

All right, everybody, look at the picture.

    28:32-28:45

This would come on the screen and you would hear, "In the arms of the angel, far away from here, from the..." Stop right there.

    28:49-28:51

    People would be livid.

    28:53-28:55

PETA would be all over this.

    28:59-29:08

There's poor pigs." It's a crazy request that they ask to go in the pigs.

    29:10-29:11

Here's something we do know for sure.

    29:11-29:12

    Why did Jesus permit it?

    29:13-29:14

    Well, there's actually three reasons.

    29:15-29:16

    This is for sure.

    29:17-29:18

    This is for sure.

    29:18-29:19

    Why did Jesus permit it?

    29:19-29:26

Reason number one, it proves demons' MO, modus operandi.

    29:27-29:29

It proves demons MO, which is what?

    29:30-29:30

    Chaos.

    29:32-29:42

Demons have a way of removing the normal instincts and restraints as they did for the man, so they did for the pigs.

    29:44-29:49

Pigs don't typically run down as a herd and commit mass suicide.

    29:52-29:58

That shows you the destructive thought patterns, the destructive work of demons.

    29:59-30:03

There's a couple other reasons Jesus permitted this.

    30:05-30:08

Second reason is it proves that they left the man, right?

    30:09-30:10

    It proves that.

    30:12-30:16

Jesus is like, "Come out, you unclean spirit," and like nothing apparently visibly happens.

    30:16-32:00

You might have had a bunch of people standing around going, "Did anything happen?" very graphic way to show that something supernatural just happened. And that leads to the third reason that Jesus did this. It displayed His power. It displayed His power. He gave them permission, proving His sovereignty, proving that demons do nothing without His permission. And church, I would say to you still today, Jesus has the power to deliver. There's somebody sitting here today who doesn't know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior, and you feel like I've done too many things wrong, and I've screwed so much up, and you don't understand the mess that I've made of my life. Jesus' power is greater than your sin. Don't undermine the God of the universe who sacrificed his own Son to pay for your who resurrected Him from the dead so that we might have eternal life. Somehow we look at the work of God and then we look at the works of our own life and we put them on the scale and say my sin is greater than God's grace. Never. You have you have no idea how much God loves you. He demonstrated it on the cross, but even with that demonstration, His love is greater than anything that we could ever fathom. His love for you and His power over your sin is greater than you'll ever know.

    32:03-32:24

There are some people here facing what we often call "besetting sins" or "habitual sins." There are people here that are wrestling with addiction. Maybe there is somebody here They're addicted to some chemical thing, whether it's prescription medication or alcohol or whatever.

    32:27-32:29

Maybe there's somebody here addicted to pornography.

    32:32-32:34

Really all addiction is is a worship disorder.

    32:35-32:38

Instead of worshiping God, you've decided to worship something else.

    32:39-32:41

The problem is it's so binding.

    32:44-32:45

    It's so enslaving.

    32:45-32:47

having a hard time breaking the habit.

    32:50-32:57

Maybe you're besetting sin as anger, or gossip, or impatience, or fear.

    32:59-33:02

Sadly, what do we do when we face these things?

    33:03-33:04

What we've learned to do is this.

    33:04-33:12

We go to seminars, and we read books, and we try secular psychological techniques, and You know, what does Dr. Phil say about this?

    33:15-33:19

The answer is what we need, what we really need is power.

    33:20-33:21

    That's what you need.

    33:23-33:24

    You need power.

    33:25-33:28

And according to the Bible, there are two things that are called the power of God.

    33:29-33:30

    Jesus, obviously, He is God.

    33:33-33:53

But outside of God Himself, outside of Jesus Christ Himself, the only thing that the Bible refers to as the power of God is what, do you know? It's the gospel. That's what you need. I am not ashamed of the gospel, Romans 1:16, for it is what? It is the power of God.

    33:55-34:03

You don't need a seminar. You don't need to take a class. You don't need a self-help conference to wrestle with sin.

    34:03-34:12

What you need is the power that God has already provided through His Holy Spirit and through His Word.

    34:14-34:16

Jesus has the power to deliver.

    34:18-34:25

And finally for today, Jesus not only has the power to deliver, but Jesus has the power to divide.

    34:28-34:30

Jesus has the power to divide.

    34:33-34:49

Verse 15 it says, "And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind." Remember this guy?

    34:49-34:56

He was the guy like 15 minutes ago, was cutting himself and screaming and naked and running around and terrorizing an entire neighborhood.

    34:57-34:58

    And now what's he doing?

    34:59-35:09

He's dressed, sitting there with Jesus, and look at the end of verse 15, it says, "And they were afraid.

    35:12-35:23

And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs." If you were there and saw that, like how many times would you repeat that story?

    35:24-35:27

Like dude, you're not going to believe what I saw.

    35:29-35:30

    Like remember a crazy guy?

    35:31-35:33

Remember a screaming, cutting guy that lived in the cemetery?

    35:34-35:45

Okay so like this Jewish guy shows up with like some of his Jewish friends and the guy like runs up to him and then all of a sudden all the pigs like run into the water and like drown themselves.

    35:45-35:46

    Dude, I'll never forget it.

    35:48-35:49

That was the craziest thing I've ever seen in my life.

    35:54-36:07

So Jesus performs such an awesome and obvious miracle and it's like, "Hey, how would you like to move into our neighborhood, Jesus?" Sadly, no.

    36:07-36:22

Look at verse 17, "And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region." They begged him to leave.

    36:23-36:26

Interestingly, the demons earlier had begged to stay.

    36:26-36:30

These people were so scared of Jesus that they begged Him to leave.

    36:31-36:33

And according to verse 18, He did.

    36:33-36:42

It says that as He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with the demons begged Him that he might be with Him.

    36:44-36:59

And He did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you." He went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

    37:02-37:08

Jesus has a way of staying, Jesus has a way of not staying where he's not welcome.

    37:10-37:14

These residents went from fearing the demoniac to fearing Jesus.

    37:15-37:18

And isn't it true that people would rather be scared of Satan than of God?

    37:21-37:21

    Why is that?

    37:23-37:26

Because Satan doesn't infringe upon your sinful behavior.

    37:27-37:30

Satan doesn't call you to surrender to righteousness.

    37:31-37:37

Satan doesn't call you to die to yourself, to live for others.

    37:39-37:41

So people would rather be scared of Satan than of God.

    37:44-37:45

    They beg Jesus to leave.

    37:46-37:48

A lot of begging in this passage.

    37:49-37:50

And the man begs Jesus to go with him.

    37:54-37:59

But instead, he became the first preacher that Jesus sent out.

    38:02-38:02

    You know that?

    38:02-38:11

This is the first guy in the Bible that Jesus sent out to preach.

    38:15-38:22

No training, no seminary, no Bible college, and no excuses.

    38:25-38:26

    Just a word about evangelism.

    38:28-38:37

You know, so often when we talk about evangelism, one of the common responses we hear is, "Well, you know, I'd like to be able to share the Bible with people, but I don't know very much." What did this guy know?

    38:39-38:44

He knew that Jesus was awesome and he had power to deliver, and that was pretty much it.

    38:46-38:47

This guy had like one sermon.

    38:48-38:51

Like, "Jesus is awesome and he delivered me.

    38:53-38:58

Jesus is awesome and he delivered me." And you should get to know Jesus.

    38:58-39:02

Like this guy had like very little material.

    39:04-39:05

    He didn't need it.

    39:06-39:07

    Neither do you.

    39:08-39:11

Yes, you should grow in the study and understanding of the Word of God.

    39:11-39:12

    Absolutely.

    39:12-39:16

That's why we have men's Bible study and ladies' Bible study in small groups and we get into God's Word here.

    39:17-39:25

We want to grow in the knowledge of God's Word, but don't let the lack of that hinder you from sharing the gospel with people.

    39:28-39:29

    Here's how easy evangelism was.

    39:31-39:32

Notice what Jesus said in verse 19.

    39:32-39:43

He says, "Go home to your friends." Jesus didn't say, "Now that you're a follower of Jesus, you're going to be a missionary in deepest, darkest Africa.

    39:44-39:48

Hey, if he calls you to that, do it." He doesn't call everybody to that.

    39:49-39:52

The first place you need to be an evangelist is where?

    39:52-39:53

    Home.

    39:54-39:56

Like, "Well, who should I share the gospel with?" Your friends.

    39:59-39:59

    Go to your workplace.

    40:01-40:02

    Go to your family.

    40:04-40:07

Go to your friends and what should I tell them?

    40:08-40:10

Tell them how much the Lord has done for you.

    40:12-40:14

Do you have a story like that?

    40:15-40:16

Do you have a story like that?

    40:16-40:24

I was walking in sin and somebody shared the gospel with me and I received Jesus Christ by faith and he has radically changed me.

    40:24-40:28

You know what, I'm not yet the person that I wanna be, but I thank God I'm not the person that I was.

    40:29-40:33

He's changing me, he's changed me and he is continuing to change me.

    40:33-40:35

You get a story like that.

    40:36-40:37

    Share that.

    40:40-40:41

That's all this guy was called to.

    40:45-40:51

He says, "Tell them how much the Lord has done for you "and how he had mercy on you." You got that?

    40:51-40:52

The guy's like, "Yeah, I got that.

    40:52-40:54

"I just experienced." All right, go do it.

    40:55-40:57

    No training, no excuses.

    41:00-41:04

Go home, go to the people that you know and tell them how awesome Jesus Christ is.

    41:05-41:15

But you have to see here in this passage, when Jesus shows up powerfully, when Jesus shows up powerfully, he instantly divides people.

    41:18-41:23

When Jesus shows up powerfully, there are going to be a group of people who are very uncomfortable with that.

    41:26-41:30

And you're going to have another group of people who become missionaries.

    41:33-41:36

But you have to see that those are the only two options.

    41:37-41:44

Either you're not really interested in Jesus and would rather ignore Him, rather Him not intrude upon your life.

    41:45-41:51

I've got my own little happy thing going here, and Jesus is going to certainly step on my toes if I get really serious about Him.

    41:54-41:58

Like, "Jesus, can you please leave?" Like these guys.

    41:59-42:03

So, there's those people, and there's missionaries.

    42:06-42:07

Those are the only two options.

    42:11-42:12

    There is no middle ground.

    42:15-42:24

Sadly, in American culture, we've created a middle ground that Jesus actually rebukes in the Bible, it's called being lukewarm.

    42:26-42:30

That's Jesus' rebuke to the church in Laodicea.

    42:32-42:32

    He says, "You're not hot.

    42:33-42:36

You're not on fire for me, and you're not cold.

    42:37-42:38

    You're not like against me.

    42:39-42:53

You're just lukewarm." And if there's a word that can describe many churches and much of mainstream religion in In the United States of America, it's lukewarm.

    42:55-43:06

It's "Jesus is my Sunday hobby." Like you, a Christian, yep, go to church every Sunday, hour and a half, we're there.

    43:09-43:10

What about like Monday through Saturday?

    43:11-43:12

Well, those are kind of my days.

    43:15-43:17

That's a culture that you don't see anywhere in Scripture.

    43:19-43:25

That Jesus is your hobby, Jesus is your Sunday morning routine.

    43:27-43:29

The Bible says that Jesus is your very life.

    43:31-43:38

So you're either, "Jesus, please leave me alone," or you're a missionary.

    43:41-43:46

If you don't see yourself as a missionary, then you haven't experienced the transforming power of Jesus.

    43:48-43:56

Because the people who have experienced the transforming power of Jesus Christ aren't able to stop talking about it.

    43:58-44:00

    If you're a Christian, you're a missionary.

    44:02-44:06

So if you have experienced it, get out there.

    44:08-44:36

people of God's mercy and power in Jesus. The gospel of Jesus Christ is about power. It has to be about power because there's evil power at work, powerful evil forces at work. The good news is Jesus has the power to deliver. Do you know Him?

    44:36-44:38

    Have you experienced it?

    44:39-44:40

    Go tell people about it.

    44:41-44:42

    Let's pray.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Mark 5:1-20

  1. Do you believe demonic possession happens today? Why or why not? How could you tell if someone does have a demon?

  2. Why do you think the demons wanted permission to enter the pigs? What do you think happened to the demons after the pigs died?

  3. Why did the locals beg Jesus to leave? What does that tell you about them?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for one another: How do you need Jesus to show up powerfully in your life?
