All right, grab your Bibles and bow your heads. Let's pray.

    00:06-00:12

Father, we pause again to thank you for the provision that you've made for us.

    00:15-00:42

And just now we stop and ask that you would minister to the children through the children's ministry, And that you would use the offering that's been received to continue to advance your kingdom Find us faithful stewards father. I thank you for the generosity of this church Just now father help us all to quiet ourselves before you so we can hear what?

    00:43-00:49

You would be communicating to us through your word We pray in Jesus name Amen Amen.

    00:55-00:58

All right, grab your Bibles, open up to Matthew chapter 18.

    01:09-01:22

A couple of years ago, we were doing this purity class for teenagers, for teenage boys, actually, and for men.

    01:22-01:26

But we really were targeting the teenage boys to talk about purity.

    01:30-01:34

And on the way to the church, I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts.

    01:34-01:35

    It was like 5 o'clock.

    01:37-01:43

I stopped at Dunkin' Donuts and just thought, pick up three dozen donuts to have for the boys, right?

    01:43-01:45

Like what teenage boys don't like donuts, right?

    01:45-01:46

    So it's like 5 o'clock again.

    01:49-01:51

    So it's operating time, right?

    01:52-01:54

    I pull into the drive-thru.

    01:55-01:58

And I said, yeah, I'd just like three dozen donuts.

    01:58-02:01

I don't care what kind, what flavor, mix them up.

    02:01-02:02

    I don't even care.

    02:02-02:03

I just need three dozen donuts.

    02:04-02:05

    And there was a pause.

    02:12-02:13

All right, hang on a second.

    02:17-02:18

    I'm like, okay.

    02:20-02:20

    He comes back.

    02:24-02:26

Yeah, I'm not sure if we have that.

    02:27-02:32

    I'm like, you're a donut store.

    02:34-02:36

Why are you checking to see if you have donuts?

    02:37-02:37

    Right?

    02:37-02:39

I've never run a donut store.

    02:40-02:45

But I imagine if you were making a checklist of things you'd need to run a donut store, what do you think's near the top?

    02:46-02:47

    Donuts, right?

    02:47-02:53

Because if you don't have donuts, pretty much anything else you do is kind of like, what are we doing, right?

    02:54-02:56

Like, you guys are dunking donuts.

    02:57-03:01

I didn't ask for three dozen of a particular flavor or what.

    03:01-03:02

I just said three dozen of anything.

    03:02-03:03

    I don't care.

    03:03-03:03

    I'm not eating them.

    03:03-03:05

Just throw three dozen of something in a box.

    03:06-03:07

We don't know if we have them.

    03:12-03:13

You should be an expert in this.

    03:14-03:15

    You're donut people.

    03:16-03:30

Well, Christians, there's something that you and I should be experts in, that sometimes we balk.

    03:32-03:33

    And that's a forgiveness.

    03:35-03:44

Shouldn't Christians, more than any other human being on the planet, any other background, religion, whatever, shouldn't Christians understand more about forgiveness than anyone else?

    03:45-03:45

    Shouldn't we?

    03:46-03:50

And let's be honest, we blow it sometimes, don't we?

    03:51-03:52

    We blow it.

    03:54-03:56

We become like the drive-thru at Dunkin' Donuts.

    03:56-04:05

And you know, right now, mentioning forgiveness, I'm sure that some people already are starting to tune out.

    04:07-04:23

There's going to be people already that are like, "I'm good. I'm good. I don't have anybody in my life." Or there's somebody that's, "Oh, I know what he's going to say. I know what he's going to say, but Jeff doesn't understand my situation, okay?

    04:24-04:30

If Pastor Jeff sat down with me and really heard what happened, he would understand why there's somebody in my life that I don't forgive.

    04:30-04:31

    He would understand.

    04:32-04:37

Okay, well, let me ask you.

    04:39-04:43

Are you good in all of your relationships?

    04:44-04:45

    Yeah, I think so.

    04:47-05:01

Is there someone that if they were in this auditorium right now, seated somewhere else, you would try to avoid them walking out of here when church is over?

    05:01-05:02

    Is there somebody like that?

    05:03-05:10

Like if you're sitting over here and you saw that, you're like, "I'm just going to sit and wait until they leave." Is there somebody like that in your life?

    05:11-05:20

Or, "Gosh, I hope I don't run into them today. I hope they don't come up and want to talk to me." Is there someone that if they tried to call you, you wouldn't want to answer the phone?

    05:22-05:23

Did you grab your cell phone?

    05:23-05:25

It's ringing and you see on the caller ID.

    05:27-05:28

I don't want to talk to that person.

    05:30-05:31

Do you have somebody like that?

    05:33-05:34

    Or.

    05:38-05:45

Is there someone in your life that if I went to them and I said, do you still have issues with this person with you?

    05:46-05:47

They would say, yeah, you know what?

    05:48-05:49

    Yeah, we got some issues.

    05:49-05:50

Do you have somebody like that in your life?

    05:52-05:55

That if I went to them, they would say, you know what?

    05:55-05:58

They might not think there's a problem, but I still have a problem with them.

    05:58-05:59

Do you have somebody like that?

    06:03-06:06

The sermon today is really an introduction to the next three sermons.

    06:08-06:10

But all four of them have one point.

    06:11-06:17

And the point is this, forgiven people forgive.

    06:21-06:21

    That's it.

    06:27-06:33

That's as simple and straightforward and biblical as it gets.

    06:35-06:36

So maybe you're not there yet.

    06:39-07:05

But by faith and anticipation, I want to say that. Forgiven people forgive. Now we're gonna play a game. I'm gonna define forgiveness and then we're gonna play a game. Forgiveness is decision to release a person from the obligation that resulted from injury. That's what forgiveness is. You injured me somehow.

    07:07-07:09

    Now you owe me something.

    07:10-07:11

    You owe me.

    07:13-07:14

    Forgiveness is saying.

    07:16-07:17

    You don't owe me anything.

    07:19-07:21

    It's not an issue anymore.

    07:23-07:26

Understanding this, that forgiveness is not enabling.

    07:28-07:30

    OK, forgiveness is not enabling.

    07:31-07:32

    Forgiveness is not rescuing.

    07:35-07:37

    Forgiveness is not justifying.

    07:39-07:42

    Forgiveness is not avoiding accountability.

    07:42-07:44

We could spend a sermon on each of those things.

    07:44-07:45

    That's not our intention.

    07:47-07:53

But this forgiveness is a decision to release a person from the obligation that resulted from injury.

    07:53-07:54

All right, let's play a game.

    07:55-07:56

We're going to look at some Bible verses.

    07:56-07:57

These are all from the New Testament.

    07:57-08:02

And I want you to see if you notice a theme. Okay?

    08:06-08:09

Matthew 6, 12. We have all those, Ashley, don't we? Of course she does.

    08:10-08:21

Matthew 6, 12. "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." Matthew 6, 14-15. "For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

    08:22-08:30

But if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses." Mark 11, 25 and 26.

    08:31-08:33

And whenever you stand praying, forgive.

    08:34-08:43

If you have anything against anyone, so that your Father who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

    08:43-08:47

But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father who is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

    08:49-08:50

    Seeing a theme yet?

    08:51-08:52

    There's more.

    08:52-09:23

Luke 6 37 judge not you will not be judged condemn not you will not be condemned forgive and you will be forgiven Luke 11 4 and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us and lead us not into temptation Ephesians 4 32 be kind to one another tender-hearted forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you.

    09:25-09:36

Colossians 3 13, bearing with one another, and if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other as the Lord has forgiven you.

    09:38-09:41

    So you also must forgive.

    09:43-09:44

How many people think you saw a theme there?

    09:48-09:51

Do you think the Lord is trying to emphasize something?

    09:52-09:56

Over and over and over and over in his word, there is a theme.

    09:56-09:57

    What is it?

    09:58-09:59

    Well, here it is.

    09:59-10:04

There is a connection between forgiveness from God and forgiveness to others.

    10:06-10:07

    There is a connection.

    10:09-10:10

    But understand this.

    10:11-10:16

Forgiveness is not the plan of salvation, okay?

    10:16-10:18

Forgiveness is not the plan of salvation.

    10:19-10:20

How then must we be saved?

    10:20-10:24

Well, the way you get saved is by forgiving people, and then God forgives you.

    10:24-10:26

That is not the plan of salvation.

    10:27-10:30

Forgiveness is the proof of salvation.

    10:32-10:40

Forgiveness is the proof of salvation because forgiven people, what?

    10:41-10:42

    Forgive.

    10:42-10:43

    What do forgiven people do?

    10:45-10:45

    Forgive.

    10:46-10:49

In a month you're going to be standing on your chair and shouting it.

    10:50-10:54

Forgiving people forgive. Do you agree with this truth?

    10:55-10:57

Well, let's look at Matthew 18.

    10:59-11:02

See how Jesus really highlighted this truth.

    11:02-11:12

Matthew chapter 18, verses 15 through 20, a very popular passage it has to deal with.

    11:14-11:18

How do we handle if someone sins against us?

    11:19-11:20

    And you know the process.

    11:20-11:22

First, you go to the person, right?

    11:22-11:23

    We don't go gossiping.

    11:23-11:24

We don't go telling everybody else.

    11:25-11:27

You sin against me, I go to you and talk to you about it.

    11:28-11:29

All right, I sin against you.

    11:30-11:31

You come to me and you talk about it.

    11:31-11:32

    That's step one.

    11:33-11:36

Like, well, okay, what if that doesn't resolve the issue?

    11:36-11:39

Well, then you get a couple more people and you go and talk.

    11:40-11:41

Well, what if that doesn't do it?

    11:41-11:44

Well, then you get the church involved.

    11:46-11:48

Well, then what if that doesn't do it?

    11:48-11:52

Jesus said, well, then you have to treat that person like a pagan or a tax collector.

    11:53-11:54

    What does that mean?

    11:55-11:57

    That means they need evangelized.

    11:58-11:58

    Why?

    12:00-12:03

    Because forgiven people forgive.

    12:06-12:12

And if they're not seeing it, if they're not getting it, The end conclusion is, well, maybe they don't know the Lord.

    12:15-12:17

So Jesus says what to do if a brother sins against you.

    12:17-12:18

We're not going to read those.

    12:18-12:21

You can you can read those later on.

    12:21-12:22

    But look at verse 21.

    12:23-12:27

So Jesus is teaching about forgiveness and then dealing with offenses.

    12:27-12:36

Then Peter came up and said to him, Lord, how often will my brother sin against me and I forgive him?

    12:37-12:40

So Jesus talked about how, Peter's like, okay, okay, I got that.

    12:41-12:41

    How often?

    12:45-12:47

    As many as seven times?

    12:53-12:57

Some of you know the passage, but have to understand a little bit of the background here.

    12:57-13:06

Peter probably thought he was showing off at this point, because in the rabbinical tradition, it was three.

    13:07-13:12

I didn't study this part, but I'm thinking that's where the whole baseball rule came from.

    13:12-13:13

Three strikes and then you're out, right?

    13:14-13:16

Well, that was the rabbinical tradition.

    13:16-13:19

I'm obligated to forgive you three times.

    13:20-13:22

But if you sin against me after that, done.

    13:24-13:26

So Peter probably thought he was showing off here.

    13:27-13:28

    Like, hey guys, watch this.

    13:29-13:32

I'm about to show Jesus how awesomely gracious I am.

    13:33-13:56

How often, Jesus? Seven. Expecting Jesus to be like, "Oh, Peter. Oh, Peter, your grace astounds me." Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven, which is what?

    13:58-14:00

    4 something 490.

    14:01-14:04

I actually had a woman come to me one time and say 490 is that the limit?

    14:06-14:16

She actually, yeah literally, she said you know I've had some you know issues with this person and she said did Jesus mean that literally because I think I'm past 490.

    14:18-14:39

Obviously not, the point is you don't keep count. The point is every time, every time your heart stands ready to forgive. Why? Because what do forgiven people do? They forgive. Right. Right. So Jesus tells a story about that.

    14:39-15:16

He says, verse 23, "Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him 10,000 talents." Now what's a talent? It doesn't mean like tap dancing or juggling. It was a unit of money. We'll talk about that in a second. "And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold with his wife and children and all that he had and payment to be made." Let's stop there.

    15:17-15:52

We're going to talk about forgiveness and we're going to talk about God's perspective on it. Not the world's. Some of these things that we'll see you might be like I don't know about that I don't know about that. Listen, Jesus said the kingdom of heaven is like this not the kingdom of the world, right? For those of you who follow Jesus Christ, born-again believers in Christ, Jesus said this is this is what it's like for you. The world doesn't agree with this. The world has all kind of philosophies on how we deal with this stuff. Jesus said, but not you.

    15:54-16:16

You live under a different set of rules, so to speak. You live under the life of the Spirit. You live under the kingdom of heaven. So what's a talent? Okay, I had to have Erin help me with the math because she's like a math whiz and I'm like a a not as much math whiz.

    16:19-16:23

A talent was actually 20 years wages.

    16:24-16:25

That was what one talent was.

    16:26-16:27

    20 years wages.

    16:27-16:28

OK, so here I do some math.

    16:30-16:32

This man owed how many talents?

    16:34-16:35

    10,000 talents.

    16:36-16:59

OK, so multiplying this out, one year's wage times 20, because 20 years is one talent, times 10,000, or the amount of talents that he owed, or just think of it this way, 200,000 years wages.

    17:00-17:07

Okay, so take whatever you earn a year and multiply that times 200,000.

    17:08-17:11

That's what this man owed the king.

    17:13-17:17

Now, how many of you sitting here this morning would be in a position to pay that?

    17:17-17:20

Like, "Oh, I'll just write you a check." Do you take a debit?

    17:21-17:21

    Nobody?

    17:21-17:22

    Yeah, me neither.

    17:23-17:24

    And that was Jesus' point.

    17:24-17:27

    This was unpayable.

    17:28-17:29

    It was unpayable.

    17:30-17:31

    Okay?

    17:33-17:36

And the question you have, how does that even happen?

    17:37-17:37

    Right?

    17:38-17:39

    How does that even happen?

    17:41-17:47

It's like the, you know, the bill comes, like, yeah, I'm gonna have to get around to that sometime in 10 years or whatever.

    17:47-17:49

And it just keeps piling up, piling up.

    17:49-17:50

    Yeah, I really should pay.

    17:50-17:51

    I'm piling up, piling up.

    17:51-17:52

How do you get to that point?

    17:55-17:59

It's unpayable, but listen, it's also irresponsible, right?

    18:00-18:07

And already you're gonna see the connection that Jesus is making, But it's just like our sin.

    18:10-18:16

Before we come to Christ, it's unpayable and it's irresponsible.

    18:18-18:21

So this guy found himself way over his head.

    18:24-18:26

And the king says, "Okay, it's time to settle accounts.

    18:28-18:33

You can't pay, so you're going to pay." Look at verse 26.

    18:34-18:41

"So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, have patience with me and I will pay you everything.

    18:44-18:45

    And you're like, yeah, right.

    18:47-18:50

He couldn't have, but you can see the desperation.

    18:51-18:54

This man was basically saying, I'll do whatever it takes.

    18:54-18:55

    Please don't punish me.

    18:55-18:58

Whatever it takes, I'll do whatever it takes to pay you back.

    18:59-19:00

    I'll pay you everything.

    19:03-19:06

Well, the king knew that there was no way that's going to happen.

    19:07-19:10

And he sees this poor guy on his knees probably crying.

    19:10-19:13

This is a story Jesus made up, so you kind of use your imagination, right?

    19:14-19:16

You just see the guy, desperate.

    19:20-19:36

It says, "And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. And you're like, what? Right.

    19:36-19:39

Go ahead. Try that. Go ahead. What?

    19:41-19:51

If somebody owed you this, you know, people estimate I've read different things, some say this is several hundred million, some one guy calculated this was like four billion dollars or whatever.

    19:52-19:54

    But imagine owing somebody.

    19:56-19:57

    A billion dollars.

    19:58-20:10

They're like, "You and your family are going to jail. Have mercy." And they're like, "You know what? You don't owe me anything." Nothing?

    20:11-20:16

No payment plan, no pound of flesh, no...

    20:16-20:32

"You don't owe me a thing. You are... you're free." Let's stop here. Some of you know this story, some of you don't, but if you didn't, here's what I think the next verse would say.

    20:33-20:43

So the man was skipping down the street, kissing people, high fives, hugs, dancing and singing.

    20:45-20:52

"When I got out of jail, he forgave me to death." That's what you'd expect, right? Isn't that what you'd expect?

    20:54-20:58

Back handsprings all the way down to 19. That's what I'd be expecting.

    20:58-21:01

    Woohoo! Free! Free!

    21:02-21:18

Well, it says in verse 28, "But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii." What's that? Well, that was a relatively small amount.

    21:18-21:20

    A denarii was a day's wage.

    21:21-21:24

So we're looking approximately at three months' wages, approximately.

    21:27-21:31

    In other words, payable, right?

    21:31-21:33

    That's doable, right?

    21:33-21:39

If you owed somebody three months' wages, you might have to scrimp and save and take a little-- you could pay that back, though, right?

    21:40-21:43

So this guy finds somebody that owes him three months' wages.

    21:46-22:00

It says, "And seizing him, he began to choke him, "saying, 'Pay what you owe.'" I was gonna try to illustrate this and say, does somebody wanna come and choke me like the guy in the story?

    22:00-22:03

And there was a line of people, and people started fighting about who would get to do that.

    22:03-22:04

    And I'm like, forget it.

    22:05-22:07

You just have to use your imagination on this.

    22:07-22:11

    But, unbelievable.

    22:13-22:19

He goes right out and find somebody that owes him a few bucks and begins to choke him.

    22:22-22:29

So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, "Have patience with me and I will pay you." Did you ever have deja vu?

    22:32-22:37

That's exactly what he said in verse 26, right?

    22:37-22:40

Same speech to the king, "Have patience, I'll pay you back.

    22:41-22:44

You're free to go." I said the same thing, have patience with me, I'll pay you back.

    22:46-22:49

He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debts.

    22:51-22:56

When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed.

    22:57-23:03

"Uh, yeah." And they went and reported to their master all that had taken place.

    23:04-23:09

Then his master summoned him and said to him, "You wicked servant!

    23:11-23:13

I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me.

    23:15-23:20

And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant as I had mercy on you?

    23:24-23:31

And in anger, his master delivered him to the jailers until he should pay all his debt.

    23:33-23:38

So also, my heavenly father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother.

    23:40-23:44

from your heart, from your heart.

    23:47-23:49

So on your outline, what's Jesus teaching about forgiveness?

    23:51-23:54

Just wanna highlight three things from this parable that Jesus is teaching.

    23:55-24:01

And the first is this, I forgive because relationships are important.

    24:04-24:06

I forgive because relationships are important.

    24:07-24:13

Now, again, this was a story Jesus told, so you've got to kind of connect some dots in your mind, so to speak.

    24:14-24:23

But would you say that the servant who choked out his fellow servant, would you say at one point those two were probably friends?

    24:24-24:30

I mean, to loan them money, they must have been friends on some level, had a friendly relationship at some point.

    24:32-24:37

But unforgiveness resulted in hatred and in violence and in punishment.

    24:37-24:39

    Those things are relationship killers.

    24:39-24:45

OK, and when you have unforgiveness against someone, it kills the relationship.

    24:49-24:51

You know, Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself.

    24:53-24:57

The question is, how would you like to be forgiven?

    24:58-25:01

How many people here have ever needed forgiveness from another person?

    25:01-25:01

    Anyone?

    25:02-25:02

    Anyone?

    25:03-25:05

I'm like an expert in this.

    25:05-25:07

Do you know how many times I've needed forgiveness from another person?

    25:08-25:09

    Like a lot.

    25:11-25:15

When that happens, how do you want to be forgiven?

    25:16-25:19

Do you want that person bringing it up every time you see him?

    25:21-25:22

Hey, Tom, good to see you.

    25:22-25:27

By the way, remember when you made that jerky comment the other day, I'm still pretty mad about that.

    25:27-25:29

I thought we dealt with that.

    25:30-25:30

    We did.

    25:32-26:19

Just taking a walk down memory lane. How do you want to be forgiven? Done with it, right? We dealt with it and we're done with it. And by the way, Christians, dealing with it has to happen. I don't know if it's a cultural thing or what, but you know how most of us deal with hurt and unforgiveness? It's just like, "Well, I'm just gonna avoid that person for the rest of my life. I'm just not going to talk to them. I'll go to a different church or I'll get a different job or I'll whatever. You got to deal with it. And I don't know why it is we can't sit down and say we disagree on this issue. I still love you as a person.

    26:19-26:25

That hasn't changed. But there's an issue going on here that we have to deal with.

    26:26-26:43

So we deal with it and then we're done with it, right? We're not gonna keep bringing it up. How do you want forgiven? You want that person to say, "You know what? It's done. I'm never gonna bring it up. I'm not even gonna think about it anymore." That's how you'd want to be forgiven. Love your neighbor as yourself.

    26:44-26:55

That's how you should forgive. Then verse 35, I want to highlight again, Jesus said, forgive from your heart.

    26:56-26:59

Okay, we're not going for the hypocritical forgiveness like, Oh, okay.

    26:59-26:59

    I forgive you.

    27:00-27:05

Meanwhile, the bitterness is brewing in the cauldron of your hearts.

    27:07-27:08

    I'm still angry.

    27:08-27:14

I'm still, but I said the words, you know, I can't help but think of it.

    27:14-27:21

Every time I, I read this, a lot of people forgive like the handshake after a high school fight, right?

    27:22-27:23

    You went to current city.

    27:26-27:28

And I was in a fight in Corn City once, OK?

    27:28-27:33

And it was actually in Mel Cimanco's gym locker room.

    27:34-27:40

But after the fight, Coach Cimanco came out and he said, knock it off, you two.

    27:40-27:41

    Now shake hands.

    27:42-27:43

    Right?

    27:45-27:46

Do you know what that handshake looked like?

    27:48-27:50

    It wasn't this embrace.

    27:52-27:53

Just bury your head on my shoulder.

    27:56-27:57

    I'm so sorry.

    27:58-27:59

    It wasn't like that.

    27:59-28:00

We just got done fist fighting.

    28:01-28:02

    She's like, shake hands.

    28:02-28:03

    You know what it was?

    28:03-28:04

    Back to back.

    28:06-28:07

    Seriously, arm extended.

    28:08-28:10

And it wasn't, I did like four or five pumps there.

    28:10-28:12

It wasn't that, it was one pump.

    28:12-28:12

    It was like, whoop.

    28:13-28:14

    And that was like, okay.

    28:15-28:19

I'm sure he walked back into his office thinking, well, they're friends again, it's all good.

    28:20-28:25

Jesus said, "From your heart, from your hearts." Forgive from your hearts.

    28:26-28:27

    It's not lingering.

    28:28-28:30

    It's not a cancer that's still attached.

    28:31-28:34

    It's gone from your hearts.

    28:37-28:41

Secondly, I forgive because it is expected.

    28:42-28:45

Okay, I forgive because it is expected.

    28:47-28:51

The fellow servants did not miss the irony of what was happening, right?

    28:53-28:57

Hey, hey, donut store person, shouldn't you know something about donuts?

    28:57-29:05

Hey, you who were just forgiven of a billion dollars, shouldn't you know something about forgiveness?

    29:06-29:09

And the fellow servants, they're like, what is going on here?

    29:09-29:11

Jesus said they were greatly distressed.

    29:11-29:14

They're like, what is this guy thinking?

    29:17-29:19

to be forgiven that much and then turn around.

    29:22-29:23

    This isn't right.

    29:25-29:26

    It's expected.

    29:28-29:30

    Unforgiveness is a testimony killer.

    29:31-29:36

Oh, so you believe in the forgiveness of your sins, but you won't forgive other people.

    29:38-29:41

Christians, your testimony should be one of lavish forgiveness.

    29:43-29:45

That's what your testimony should be.

    29:45-29:49

That's how people should know you in your family, in your workplace.

    29:49-29:50

That's how they should know you.

    29:52-29:54

They should say, you know, Bob, I'll tell you what.

    29:55-29:57

I've seen some people do some really rude things to him.

    29:58-30:01

And he forgives them, never heard him say a bad word about anybody, and that's true.

    30:02-30:04

I've never heard him say a bad word about anybody.

    30:05-30:12

I'm sure from worldly standards, somebody would say you would have justification to say some bad things about some people.

    30:12-30:13

    I've never heard it.

    30:14-30:15

    That should be your testimony.

    30:18-30:20

Well, he's totally like, he's about forgiveness.

    30:20-30:25

He's just like, yeah, they did some rotten, horrible things to me and you know what?

    30:26-30:27

Just gonna deal with it and move on.

    30:28-30:30

Not gonna think about it, not gonna dwell on it.

    30:31-30:32

    It's expected.

    30:33-30:35

But even Christians think they found some loopholes.

    30:37-30:38

Even Christians think they found some loopholes.

    30:38-30:41

Well, Pastor Jeff, you don't know, you don't know.

    30:41-30:45

Here's five loopholes, just jot these down if you have some room on your outline.

    30:46-30:48

Five excuses people give for not forgiving.

    30:51-30:54

    Number five, I just can't.

    30:55-30:57

Some people, you ever hear somebody say that?

    30:58-30:59

You need to forgive that person.

    31:00-31:01

    I just can't.

    31:05-31:07

I am not discounting that it's hard.

    31:09-31:10

    Please hear me.

    31:11-31:15

Forgiveness is a matter of the will.

    31:17-31:18

It's a matter of the will.

    31:21-31:22

It's not a matter of emotions.

    31:24-31:25

It's a matter of your will.

    31:30-31:35

"I just can't." "The truth is, I just won't." You can.

    31:35-31:41

Well, actually, only by the power of Christ can you.

    31:43-31:53

But Christians have no excuse to say, "I can't. I can't really." You know, the God of the universe resides within you, so what can't you do again?

    31:57-32:01

Oh, by the way, the God of the universe, like forgiveness is sort of His thing.

    32:01-32:02

    That's like his trademark.

    32:03-32:07

Like he wrote the book on forgiveness, and he's living in you.

    32:09-32:13

In the flesh you can't, but you are not in the flesh.

    32:15-32:28

You need a healthy dose of throwing myself at the Lord wholeheartedly, saying, "God, I can't do this myself. You need to do a work, but God, as an act of my will, I want to forgive that person.

    32:28-32:29

God, can you make that happen?

    32:33-32:36

A lot of people don't get there because they don't get past the emotions.

    32:36-32:39

    "I won't forgive, I won't forgive." You can.

    32:41-32:42

Because Christ will do it in you.

    32:43-32:50

Number four, top five reasons. Number four, well that other person, they don't want to reconcile.

    32:51-32:55

That's another reason Christians, "You should forgive that person." Well, you don't want to.

    32:57-33:00

Jeff, you should forgive Sam. Oh, he doesn't want to forgive.

    33:01-33:06

He doesn't want the relationship restored. Listen, that's their problem. Don't make it yours.

    33:08-33:13

As I heard one person put it, you know, forgiveness a lot of times is like those rooms in the hotel.

    33:14-33:16

Do you ever have those adjoining rooms that have those two doors?

    33:17-33:20

That you can like, you know, like a big family's all on vacation.

    33:20-33:24

You can, you have a side, the other room has, you know what I'm talking about?

    33:25-33:25

    Okay.

    33:27-34:22

Sometimes forgiveness looks like that, that you're saying, "My side's open," and you're like pounding on the door saying, "Listen, I can't make you open your door, but my side is open. I'm not going to kick your door down, but I want you to know that my door is open." So if they don't want to reconcile, that's their problem, don't make it yours. Number three, they'll do it again. If I just forgive them, they'll do it again. You know what? They might. That's their problem. Don't make it yours. Jesus said in Luke 17, verse 4, "If he sins against you seven times in the day and turns to you seven times saying, 'I repent,' you must forgive him. Notice the word must. Jesus didn't say should or should try. He said you must.

    34:23-34:31

Seven times a day. Did you imagine? They might do it again. That's their problem.

    34:33-34:54

Should you burden your own spirit because of the hard-heartedness of someone else. Number two, I'll forgive, but I won't forget. How many people have said or heard that? I'll forgive, but I won't forget. That's a backward statement.

    34:58-35:31

That is a backward statement. You can't forget if you won't forgive. You can't forget because you're choosing to dwell on it. You see? When that's constantly being played in your mind, that thing that she did to me, that conversation that he and I had that where he said those things and the way he talked and you keep playing it over and over. Anybody ever do that? It just doesn't shut off. You keep playing that thing over and over in your head. I can't believe he He did that to me.

    35:31-35:41

And if you are unwilling to forgive, you're not going to be able to forget.

    35:44-35:46

Because you can't forget because you're choosing to dwell on it.

    35:46-35:49

Forgiveness means I choose to stop thinking about it.

    35:51-35:52

I choose to stop thinking about it.

    35:56-35:57

Your mind is an amazing thing.

    36:00-36:02

But do you know something your mind is unable to do?

    36:03-36:04

Is think about two things at once.

    36:05-36:05

    You can't do it.

    36:06-36:07

    You can't do it.

    36:09-36:11

Sure women are better multitaskers than men.

    36:11-36:12

I won't deny that at all.

    36:15-36:16

But go home and do an experiment.

    36:16-36:22

Turn the radio on and turn the TV on and try to hear what's going on at both at the same time.

    36:22-36:22

    You can't do it.

    36:24-36:25

    You can't do it.

    36:26-36:28

You see, that's how it is with forgiveness.

    36:30-36:40

When you start filling your mind with other things, you're not going to dwell on the hurt, the offense.

    36:42-36:43

Here's the big one, number one.

    36:43-36:44

You know what it is, right?

    36:45-36:46

You know what number one is.

    36:47-36:48

He has to come to me.

    36:50-36:51

    That's the big one.

    36:51-36:52

He has to come to me.

    36:55-36:57

    Well, Matthew 5.

    36:57-37:05

So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there, remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go.

    37:05-37:09

First be reconciled to your brother and then come and offer your gift.

    37:12-37:16

So in that case, you have offended someone else, right?

    37:17-37:21

So Jesus is saying, summing up, if you've offended someone else, you need to go to them.

    37:22-37:30

And in Matthew 18, 15, "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault." So in that case, you're the one who's been offended.

    37:30-37:33

And Jesus said you should what? You should go.

    37:34-37:40

So the way I see it, when you compare Matthew chapter 5 and Matthew chapter 18, if you've offended someone, you should go to them.

    37:41-37:45

If someone has offended you, you should go to them.

    37:45-37:46

    There's no out.

    37:47-37:51

Somehow we have in our minds we're going to put the burden of that responsibility on that other person.

    37:51-37:53

That's just not how it is.

    37:53-37:59

And I might have to go and say, "Paul, you know what? Did I offend you the other day when I said..." I might have to go to you and talk about that.

    38:00-38:10

Or if Paul offends me, I've got to call this guy and say, "Paul, you know what, man? I love you, but that hurt." You're on the hook either way.

    38:13-38:23

Then third lesson, "I forgive because..." This is the big one.

    38:24-38:26

This is really what this is all about.

    38:26-38:27

"I forgive because I am," what?

    38:29-38:29

    Forgiven.

    38:32-38:43

"I forgive because I am forgiven." If you can't forgive or you won't forgive, please hear me.

    38:45-39:01

The first question is, "Do I really understand the gospel?" C.S. Lewis said this, "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." So let me ask you, how many sins have you been forgiven by God?

    39:02-39:04

How many? Let's put a number.

    39:06-39:07

Darla, how many? Five or six?

    39:08-39:11

I think God's forgiven you five or six times, He's saying more, right?

    39:12-39:12

    Obviously.

    39:12-39:25

Could you keep track of every thought, word, or deed in the course of your life, and the ones that you will do when you leave here?

    39:27-39:29

What kind of a number could you put on that?

    39:32-39:33

    You couldn't.

    39:36-39:38

You couldn't put a number on that.

    39:42-39:50

So take time to consider all of the things God has forgiven me for in Christ.

    39:52-40:03

How can I possibly hold one sin or two sins or 490 sins against someone else?

    40:05-40:07

    It's foolishness, isn't it?

    40:08-40:09

    How dare I?

    40:13-40:18

It's one of the interesting things about being a pastor, when people come for counseling over issues like this.

    40:18-40:19

I've seen it so many times.

    40:20-40:21

    Well, what's really the issue?

    40:21-40:28

When people start talking about it out loud, you see that look of recognition on their face halfway through, that they're like, "Oh wow, that is really stupid, isn't it?

    40:29-40:40

That I'm so mad about that." But when they start talking, yeah, I'm so upset because I might have misinterpreted something in the tone of her voice.

    40:46-40:59

And I've offended a holy God who has said in Christ, "You're free." What am I doing? What am I doing?

    41:00-41:05

Not only were your sins more, but they were greater because you sinned against God.

    41:08-41:15

So the only way to forgive is to live in the understanding and freedom of Christ's forgiveness.

    41:20-41:23

I want you to jot some notes down. I have this on your outline.

    41:23-41:25

We're coming to a conclusion here.

    41:28-41:29

    Thank you for your grace.

    41:29-41:32

I haven't preached for the last three weeks, so I've had some things to say.

    41:35-41:38

And really, this was just the introduction to the next three sermons.

    41:38-41:41

Aren't you glad I'm not doing, like, the sermon that goes with this introduction?

    41:46-41:54

No matter how many times we preach this, teach this, sing this, some people don't get it.

    41:55-41:56

So we're going to take another run at it.

    41:56-41:58

This is so important you understand.

    41:59-42:03

If I were to ask you, how thorough has your forgiveness been from Christ?

    42:03-42:07

How thoroughly are you forgiven? How completely are you forgiven?

    42:08-42:24

I think we have like the head theological, biblical answer, but I still talk to Christians that say things like, "When we're lined up to get into heaven, I hope you're not standing behind me, because I have a lot to answer for." I have a good friend that says that.

    42:25-42:27

every time I see him, and I give him the same sermon every time.

    42:28-42:32

Like, "Have you received Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sin?" "Oh yeah, I have." Then it's not an issue.

    42:35-42:37

But people still hold on. I'm going to have a lot to answer for.

    42:38-42:48

I had another friend, "God, when I die, God's going to show me a movie of my life and sit there and point out all the things that I've done wrong." People still hold on to these silly notions.

    42:49-42:54

The only way that you're going to forgive people is when you understand how thoroughly and completely you've been forgiven.

    42:54-42:56

So we're going to take a couple minutes and do that, okay?

    42:58-43:00

Quick study. This will be real quick.

    43:01-43:02

I'm going to jot these down, look these up.

    43:04-43:08

What God's grace has done to my sin, number one, my sin is cleansed.

    43:09-43:16

Isaiah 118, "Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord, "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.

    43:16-43:23

Though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." So God promises a thorough cleansing. How white is snow?

    43:25-43:25

    Pretty white, right?

    43:27-43:40

No matter how dirty we become from our sinful, wicked ways, God says, "I'll scrub you up so much that you're going to be as white as snow." Cleansed.

    43:40-43:41

Number two, my sin is removed.

    43:42-43:43

    My sin is removed.

    43:43-43:49

As far as the east is from the west, so far does He remove our transgression from us.

    43:51-43:52

How far is east from west?

    43:54-43:56

You know why God didn't say as far as the north is from the south? Do you know why?

    43:57-44:02

Because if you keep going north, eventually you're going to what?

    44:02-44:03

    Start going south, right?

    44:04-44:08

Anybody have a globe? Anybody have a globe with them? No?

    44:08-44:09

You have to take my word for it.

    44:09-44:13

But if you go north far enough, eventually you have no choice but to go south.

    44:13-44:15

but that's not true east and west.

    44:15-44:18

You can keep going east eternally.

    44:19-44:24

And God said, "That's how far your sin's been removed from you." What did John the Baptist say about Jesus?

    44:25-44:35

"There's a Lamb of God who takes sin away, takes away the sin." So that's how far.

    44:36-44:40

Like, "Well, he took it in Wexford and he buried it in Harmony." No.

    44:43-44:46

Far removed. As far as the east is from the west, it's an infinite gap.

    44:49-44:51

OK, number three, my sin is lost.

    44:54-44:59

He will again have compassion on us, Micah 719, he will tread our iniquities underfoot.

    44:59-45:00

    Isn't that a great picture?

    45:01-45:04

God's like got his boots on and he's like, here's Jeff's sin.

    45:04-45:08

He's like, oh, and he just stomps it into the dirt.

    45:08-45:10

And I love this next picture even more.

    45:10-45:14

You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

    45:14-45:16

Do you understand how awesome that is?

    45:22-45:24

Aaron and I got married on a cruise.

    45:26-45:26

    But let's play pretend.

    45:27-45:41

What if on that cruise, I'm standing leaning over the rail in the middle of whatever ocean we were in, And I take my wedding ring off and just start flicking it like a quarter and catching it.

    45:44-45:48

And then all of a sudden I drop it and it falls into the ocean.

    45:50-45:54

What are the chances I'm ever going to get that ring back? What are the chances?

    45:58-46:04

It falls into the ocean. What are the chances I could ever try to get back to that spot?

    46:04-46:09

And even if I found that spot and went underwater, like how deep's the ocean?

    46:11-46:13

What are the chances I'm ever going to get that ring back?

    46:16-46:17

    Never, right?

    46:18-46:19

See, that's what God's saying about our sin.

    46:19-46:25

He's like, "I'm going to take your sin and just like off the cruise ship, into the ocean." But not just in the ocean.

    46:26-46:33

God's like, "I'm going to go down to the bottom of the ocean, I'm going to dig a hole, and then I'm going to bury it and cover it over." What are the chances of it ever coming back?

    46:34-46:40

God says, "That's what I'm doing with your sin. I'm going to cast it into the depths of the sea.

    46:42-46:56

My sin is forgotten." Number four, "My sin is forgotten. I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more." This must be a big deal to God because He said it in the Old Testament and the New Testament.

    46:57-47:10

"I will remember their sins no more." Okay, so if you're the guy that thinks you've got a lot of explaining to do, I kind of do want to be standing behind you in the line to heaven, whatever that stupid joke is.

    47:11-47:33

But when you're like, "But God, I did all this, I did all these horrible things." And God's like, "Yeah, I don't remember." "You don't remember? I did this and I did this, and God, I did all these horrible things." And God's like, "Yeah, I He chose not to remember.

    47:36-47:37

It's not going to come up.

    47:38-47:41

And then number five, "My sin is pardoned.

    47:43-47:55

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Romans 8.1 There the picture is God is the judge, the trial.

    47:57-47:58

    Your attorney is Jesus Christ.

    48:00-48:09

And God says, "You are pronounced not guilty." Okay, now who's gonna walk into that courtroom and try to overturn that decision?

    48:11-48:13

The judge of the universe says you're not guilty.

    48:17-48:19

Would you dare debate him on that?

    48:20-48:22

Would you dare question him on that?

    48:23-48:24

    God says you're not guilty.

    48:25-48:28

Satan will try to convince you that you are.

    48:30-48:37

Where God has said, "No, in Christ you are not guilty." No condemnation.

    48:42-48:48

Timothy Keller said, "And the reason for God." When we forgive, do we have that quote up here?

    48:49-48:50

    Yes, thank you.

    48:50-48:56

When we forgive, we forego our opportunity to return affliction on our perpetrator.

    48:56-49:02

We assume ourselves the debt of the transgression against us.

    49:06-49:09

But this is exactly what the Lord God did for us on the cross.

    49:09-49:22

And if we claim His forgiveness without forgiving others, while remaining petty, grudge-holding people, then we do not fully understand the cross, and we retain upon ourselves the death penalty for our sins.

    49:26-49:28

    Do you understand the cross?

    49:29-49:32

Because if you do, forgiven people do what?

    49:34-49:34

    Forgive.

    49:35-49:41

So today, today, some of you might need to make a phone call.

    49:43-50:09

Some of you might need to, maybe it's a matter of sending an email or a text message to say, "Hey, you know what? I'd like to talk." Just to get the door open to say, "Look, I know things haven't been okay between us, and I'd love to talk to you about that. Is there some time this week that we can get together?" You need to start that process today. It's time to clear the books.

    50:12-50:18

It's time to settle accounts. Because forgiven people forgive.

    50:23-50:29

And our forgiveness is remembered by the Lord's table.

    50:29-50:35

If our ushers would come forward and our worship team would come up, we're going to close our service by taking the Lord's Supper.

    50:39-51:10

And I'd like to remind you at the Lord's Supper, Remember, this isn't a matter of God just saying, "I'm just going to erase the debt." The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is God saying, "I will pay the debt that you owe me."

Sermon Notes (PDF): BLANK
Hint: Highlight blanks above for answers!

  • 00:00-00:12

All right, good morning And we certainly want people to be in involved in small groups and maybe I'll have a video in a week or two Letting you know about mine Can I have the first slide, please?

    00:17-00:31

So last week we talked a little bit about the church at Ephesus and We talked about the beginning of a great church and some of the problems that were being faced and this week I'm going to talk about Timothy and his mission in this church.

    00:32-00:32

    Next slide.

    00:35-00:52

So, just to get oriented, what this map shows is the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, and the travel that Paul had, and right in the middle of it is Ephesus and Miletus.

    00:52-01:01

And what we saw last week was that Paul had established a church at Ephesus that was one of the greatest churches ever.

    01:01-01:11

He spent almost three years teaching until all the area that is now Turkey, which the Romans called Asia, heard the word of the Lord because of this.

    01:11-01:24

However, we also saw that later Paul came back and he sent for the elders at Ephesus to come to Miletus and had a message for them as well.

    01:24-01:28

And the message was a terrifying message and we're going to talk about that today.

    01:29-01:31

But before we do, let's open up in a word of prayer.

    01:31-01:46

Our Devotee Father, I pray that we would have insight into your Word, and that we would understand what you would have us to know, and that we will search your Word to make sure that these things are true.

    01:49-03:40

What you see is, also in this picture on the far left, is Rome, and we know what happened with the Roman Catholicism and its influence, but I'd like to focus today on Ephesus. Now the thing that I wanted to remind you of is last week we read a little bit about the message that Paul gave to the elders from Ephesus after he'd spent three years there teaching. And what he said was very interesting and I'll just read this for you, it's not in your outlined it's in Acts chapter 20 verse 28 through 30. He says, "Be on your guard for yourself and for all the flock among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the flock or the Church of God which he purchased with his own blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. And from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them." And so what we see is the church had been attacked from the outside because of a riot and now it was going to be attacked from the inside. And the terrifying thing is that the attack would come from among the leaders themselves. Who were they? How were they to be defended what was going to happen in this church to preserve the truth and Paul gives in this advice therefore be on the alert remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease admonishing you with tears and now I commend you to God and the word of his grace which is able to build you up and give you inheritance among the saints. He didn't tell them who they were.

    03:40-03:47

He said, "I commend you to God and the word of His grace." That was it.

    03:48-04:00

And so, the greatest church that had ever been seen up to that point in time was under a warning, a prophecy that a disaster was coming.

    04:01-04:09

And what we pointed out last week is every time God does a great work, Satan opposes it and attacks it.

    04:09-04:17

It has happened in every church that has ever been founded, is that Satan attacks.

    04:17-04:26

This church has the potential of having a tremendous influence throughout our area, but it will also be attacked.

    04:27-04:33

What do we do? How do we expect and prepare for this attack?

    04:33-04:42

Well, this brings us to the story of Timothy, and I've given a detailed outline on the back of your bulletin.

    04:43-04:53

Now, the reason is that almost every word that I'm going to say is on here, so it's not an outline in a broad sense, it's an outline in a detailed sense.

    04:53-04:55

And we'll spend a little bit of time going through that.

    04:56-05:05

Now, if you have a pew Bible, or one that you took from the back, We'll be looking at 1 and 2 Timothy as our major text.

    05:05-05:12

That begins on page 642, so that you can put your marker at that point, 642.

    05:13-05:23

But I'd like to begin today with an introduction of Timothy, which is in Acts chapter 16, verses one through three, that is on page 601.

    05:24-05:25

    601.

    05:36-06:18

So in Acts chapter 16, and we talked about the book of Acts giving a description of all the places that Paul had gone, it says, "And he came to Derbe and to Lystra. And behold, certain disciples there named Timothy. This is the first time Timothy is mentioned. He's the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer but his father was Greek. So his mother was Jewish and his father was Greek. And he was well spoken of by the brethren who enlisted in an Iconium. And Paul wanted this man to go with him. And what's interesting is that we never hear of Timothy's father again.

    06:19-06:33

I don't know what happened to him, but you never see him and what you see is that Paul acts as his father and talks to about Timothy as his son and decided to bring him up and to train him.

    06:34-06:43

And so Paul wanted this man to go with him. And he took him and he circumcised him because of the Jews who were within those parts for they all knew that his father was Greek.

    06:43-06:56

And so Timothy, even though he had a Jewish mother, and we don't know where his father was, had never been circumcised, never really followed the Jewish tradition in the way of a Hebrew male.

    06:56-07:04

And so Paul circumcised him just to, because Timothy was going to be traveling with him in that concession.

    07:05-07:23

Now, on the other hand, Titus, who is another individual that followed Paul and traveled with him, Paul said, "I refuse to have him circumcised and to give in from that standpoint." But in this case, young Timothy was circumcised and then spent the rest of his life following Paul around.

    07:25-07:30

Now, let's move to 2 Timothy chapter 1.

    07:31-07:35

And as I said, we'll spend quite a bit of time in 1 and 2 Timothy.

    07:37-10:13

So in 2 Timothy chapter 1 and verse 5 it says, "For I'm mindful of your sincere faith which is in you, which dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your father your mother Eunice, and I am sure that is in within you as well. That gives us even more confirmation that he was actually raised by his mother and his grandmother. And have we seen families where the mother is struggling, we don't know where the father is, the grandmother comes in and helps raise the child. This is probably what Timothy faced. It was the grandmother who really was the person of faith and came to help her daughter under difficult circumstances. Timothy had the circumcision. The grandmother had the circumstances and helped to raise this boy Timothy and Paul saw that he was without a father and a father figure and had compassion for this kid and decided to bring him along with him. But if you back up into verse 4, Paul in writing to him as he says, "longing to see you as I recall your tears that I might be filled with joy." So Timothy was emotionally somewhat of a weak person who was subject to crying and he was someone who was often tearful. In 1st Timothy chapter 5, and if you just back up a couple pages in verse 23, he gives us a little bit more insight into Timothy. So now Paul is writing his first letter to Timothy and he points out in verse 23, he says, "No longer drink water exclusively, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments." So Timothy was not only emotionally weak and subject to tears, but he was also physically weak and had stomach ailments and sicknesses. He was a weakling and a sick little boy that really had not had a father to raise him to look after him and that's who Timothy was. But one of the most amazing passages is in 1 Corinthians chapter 16 because Paul never says this about anybody anywhere else in the Bible.

    10:14-10:18

It's unbelievable. It's on page 625 if you're looking for it.

    10:18-10:26

But let's go to 1 Corinthians chapter 16 to get a little bit more insight into the kind of person Timothy was.

    10:27-10:35

1 Corinthians chapter 16. It's the last chapter in 1 Corinthians.

    10:38-10:40

    chapter 16 and verse 10.

    10:44-10:57

And Paul says to the Corinthians, "Now if Timothy comes, see that he is with you without cause to be afraid, for he is doing the Lord's work as I am also.

    10:58-11:24

Let no one therefore despise him, but send him on his way in peace, so that he may come to me, for I expect him with a brethren." Has anybody else been given a warning, "Now I'm going to send somebody, but he's very timid, and he's afraid, and you're going to scare him, so please be very gentle with Timothy." That's what it says. It's unbelievable.

    11:25-11:30

And he says, "Let no one despise him." What kind of a kid was this?

    11:30-12:01

He was such a weakling and such a loser that when he came with a message from Paul, everybody said this kid's a loser He probably started crying I'm serious. That's what it says. This is that So that's that that's a little insight into who this person Timothy was so he was afraid and despised So our first set of the outline his mother was Jewish. His father was Greek He was raised by his mother and probably primarily by his grandmother.

    12:02-12:07

Paul picked him up and took care of him, was a father figure to him.

    12:09-12:11

He was remembered by Paul for his tears.

    12:12-12:19

Timothy was frequently sick and Timothy was someone who was afraid and despised by others.

    12:26-12:31

Now Paul that there's a variety of things that happened as Paul trained him.

    12:32-12:41

One of them, and we're not going to necessarily go there, is in 2 Corinthians 1, verses 1 and 19.

    12:41-12:48

What it tells us is that Paul, during his teaching, had Timothy and Silas and other people help with the Bible teaching.

    12:48-12:51

So we know Timothy was able to teach the Bible.

    12:53-13:07

Going back to Acts, and we're going to be working through this section of Acts again, Acts chapter 17, and I'm going to read verses 14 through 15, and then chapter 18, verse 5.

    13:08-13:22

Acts chapter 17, beginning in verse 14, it says, "And immediately the brethren sent Paul out to go as far as the sea, and Silas and Timothy remained there.

    13:23-13:33

Now those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens and received a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible without delay.

    13:33-13:52

So this story is Paul's missionary trip and he was in Thessalonica and he went from Berea to Thessalonica and was threatened and they had to take him away and send him on to Athens and then Paul and Silas who were caring for him stayed to take care of the business there and then we're going to go catch up with Paul in the future.

    13:52-13:59

And so these men were working with Paul as well.

    13:59-14:28

And chapter 18, verse 5, it says, "When Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul began devoting himself completely to the Word, solemnly testifying to the Jews that Jesus was the Christ." And so in that time of history, It was a tremendous amount of effort to take care of your daily needs, because they didn't have microwaves, believe it or not, and they didn't have other conveniences, so it was a big effort.

    14:28-14:38

And Silas and Timothy helped Paul by taking care of those physical needs and preparing for him so he could dedicate himself to teaching the Word.

    14:40-14:43

So Silas and Timothy cared for Paul's physical needs.

    14:44-14:47

If we go forward another chapter, chapter 19.

    14:47-15:10

Now we looked at this last week and this describes the incredible growth of the church in Ephesus and it talks about the riot and the disaster that occurred when the people that were taking care of the temple of Artemis and selling the little souvenirs were losing all their business and they started a riot.

    15:10-15:23

Right in the middle of this there's an interesting verse that I'd like to draw your attention to today And this is verses 19, excuse me, verses 21 and 22.

    15:24-15:53

It says, "Now after these things were finished, Paul purposed in the Spirit to go to Jerusalem after he had passed through Macedonia and Archaea, saying, 'I have been there, and I must see Rome.' And having sent to Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while." So now we see Timothy here again being sent ahead to make preparation and get ready for Paul so when he came he could devote himself to teaching.

    15:54-15:58

So this is what Paul had trained Timothy to do.

    15:58-16:12

He taught them the Word and taught him about how to care or prepare for Paul so that when he came to a new city he was able to immediately start teaching and there was no time wasted in trying to support himself.

    16:12-16:15

and these people played a very important role early on.

    16:16-16:24

Now let's go forward to chapter 20, because Timothy was with Paul at a very critical time.

    16:25-16:42

And what we see in verse 4, it says, "And he was accompanied by," and he lists a number of people that Paul was traveling with, And third from the last, you see, Timothy is along with this group of people.

    16:43-16:44

Now, why do I point that out?

    16:46-17:09

Because that was the group that stopped in Miletus and heard Paul give the prophecy that there would be savage wolves attacking that church from the inside, and that from among the elders, people would arise, saying perverse things, and tearing the church apart, breaking it up, and destroying the church.

    17:09-17:16

So Paul, in speaking to the elders, had another audience there, and Timothy was there listening, and what was he thinking?

    17:16-17:27

He thought, "This is a disaster. This is a disaster, and the last thing I want to do is have a part of this," when he heard about the problems coming to Ephesus.

    17:29-17:36

So now let's get to the heart of the teaching today in 1 Timothy.

    17:37-17:47

So Paul sent two letters to Timothy about five years apart, and the first letter he sent was called 1 Timothy, and it's on page 624 of your outline.

    17:47-17:56

And let's turn to 1 Timothy, and I just wanted to point out a couple things in 1 Timothy that...

    17:59-18:01

    highlight the problem.

    18:02-18:32

So 1 Timothy chapter 1, the very first thing that Paul points out in verse 3, he says, "As I urged you upon my departure from Macedonia," this is one of Paul's later trips, "Remain on at Ephesus in order that you may instruct certain men not to teach strange doctrines." Oh my stars. Can you imagine Timothy?

    18:33-18:39

He knew that it was going to be a disaster, the church was about to be attacked.

    18:39-18:41

The beginning of it had already occurred.

    18:42-18:46

People were starting to teach alternate doctors and twisting the truth.

    18:46-18:51

and twisting things and tearing the church apart by destroying its foundation.

    18:52-19:00

And Paul urged him to stay there and teach these certain men, not to teach false doctrines.

    19:02-19:05

    Verses 18 and 19 of chapter 1.

    19:07-19:40

He tells Timothy, "I have a suggestion for you." No, I'm sorry. He says, "This I command, this command I entrust you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecy previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, and keeping the faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regarding to their faith." What was the effect of these false teachings?

    19:41-19:53

Faith is shipwrecked. People's spiritual lives are confused and destroyed and the effectiveness of God's Word is lost if you grab on to a false doctrine.

    19:54-20:01

And Paul commanded Timothy to fight the good fight, to keep the faith with a good conscience.

    20:01-20:19

He also told him in chapter 6, another important thing, and I can't go through this whole passage, but I'm going to give you a little bit of flavor of it.

    20:20-21:02

In verses 3 to 5, it says, "If anyone advocates a different doctrine than Timothy was to teach, and does not agree with sound words, which are those of our Lord Jesus Christ, and with doctrines that conform to godliness, he has conceded and understands nothing, but he has a morbid interest in controversial questions and disputes about words, out of which arise envy, strife, abusive language, evil suspicions, and he goes on and describes that in more detail, constant friction between men of depraved minds and deprived of the truth who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

    21:03-22:44

So again, Paul says, "Don't get involved in fights with these people because you're going to get sucked into philosophical arguments and stay away from it." Instead, he points out in verses 11 and 12, "Flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness, fight the good fight of faith, take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and that you made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses." So Paul leaves Timothy at Ephesus to teach sound doctrine, to deal with a false doctrine, to fight the fight, not to argue with other people, but to teach the Word. Now the next section is one of the saddest passages in the entire Bible. 2 Timothy is, in my view, even worse than Lamentations. It is a terribly disappointing letter that Paul sent to Timothy about five years later. The first thing in Timothy's failure is, you know found out? After five years at Ephesus, he found out he wasn't Paul. He was not an apostle. He didn't have apostolic authority. People despised him. Just because Paul sent him there didn't mean that people didn't despise him. Let's look what happened to poor Timothy.

    22:46-23:00

Verse 6, "For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of the hands." What happened to his gift? Why does he have to kindle it again?

    23:00-23:05

Because it's burned out. Timothy stopped using his gift.

    23:07-23:09

You don't restart something unless it's stopped.

    23:10-23:22

It's like a campfire when you get up in the morning that's almost completely burned out, and there's a few ashes, and if you gently blow on it, you can get a little bit of a flame and hopefully start a fire going again.

    23:22-23:23

    That was Timothy.

    23:24-23:27

Timothy was a burned-out campfire who was done.

    23:29-23:30

    What had happened?

    23:32-23:42

What had happened in that previous five years where Timothy went with great confidence and a strong letter of instruction from Paul, and instead, it was a disaster?

    23:44-23:59

Look at verse 7. "For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline." What was the problem? Timothy had shrunk back. He was timid. He was too timid.

    24:01-24:14

And the power of God is not one of timidity. He was relying on his own ability, his own sense of who he was and the authority that he had from being training with Paul, and it was a disaster.

    24:17-24:18

Look at verses 8 and 12.

    24:20-24:32

"Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, or of me, his prisoner." In verse 12, "For this reason I also suffered these things, but I am not ashamed.

    24:33-24:42

For I know who I have believed and convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted him against that day." What happened to Timothy?

    24:43-24:50

Those false teachers had beaten him so badly that he was ashamed of who he was and his association with Paul.

    24:50-24:53

And Paul goes on and says, "Everybody in Asia has turned against me.

    24:53-24:58

These false teachers have turned the entire church against me and against you.

    24:58-25:01

And now you're ashamed of even knowing me.

    25:01-25:05

You're not using your gifts. You're afraid and timid and you become useless.

    25:08-25:25

In verse 8, the last half of verse 8, Paul says, "Join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God." He was afraid to suffer. He'd had a little taste of being beaten and he was afraid and withdrew.

    25:25-25:27

He just, he did not want to suffer.

    25:28-25:49

And verse 13, he says, "Retain the standard of sound words, which you have heard from me in the faith and love for which in Jesus Christ," verse 14, "guard through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us the treasure which has been entrusted to you." Timothy had stopped teaching sound doctrine.

    25:50-26:02

He was afraid to teach the Word because people were making fun of him, they were ridiculing him, They were embarrassing him and he became a complete failure.

    26:03-26:10

He was not only physically a loser, spiritually and in this responsibility, he proved to be a loser.

    26:16-26:16

    But we're not done yet.

    26:18-26:20

    Why did Paul choose Timothy?

    26:21-26:34

Why did Paul send Timothy to this church where he knew that the most vicious attack that Satan could muster was about to hit that church, and he sent Timothy?

    26:35-26:36

    Do you know why?

    26:37-26:48

Well, if you turn to page 637, which is Philippians chapter 2, Paul gives us a little insight into Timothy that we may have missed.

    26:49-26:51

And I certainly would have missed.

    26:54-27:04

Paul says to the Philippians, "But I hope in the Lord to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I might be encouraged when I learn of your condition." Now listen to verse 20.

    27:07-27:20

"For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare.

    27:21-27:35

I have no one else who cares about people." In verse 21 it says, "For they all seek after their own interest, not those of Christ.

    27:37-27:45

But you know of His proven worth, that He has served me for the furtherance of the gospel like a child." serving his father.

    27:49-27:53

Do you see what Paul saw in this weak man?

    27:55-28:03

    Let's look again at 1 Corinthians 4, in verses 16 and 17.

    28:20-28:56

Paul says to them, "I exhort you, therefore, be imitators of me. For this reason I have sent you Timothy, who is my beloved and faithful child in the Lord, and he will remind you of my ways for which in Christ, just as I teach everywhere in every church." So Timothy not only knew how to teach, he knew Paul's way and how to live a Christian life, how to care for people, and was someone who loved the Lord and he loved people, and Paul could trust him to demonstrate how a Christian should live their life.

    29:03-29:08

Now, 2 Timothy doesn't end with an outline of these disasters.

    29:09-29:11

This is a sad book as well.

    29:12-29:21

At the very end, Paul says in chapter 4, verses 7 and 8, he says, "I've fought the good fight, I've finished the course, I've kept the faith.

    29:22-29:36

In the future there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness with the Lord the righteous judge will award to me on that day, not only to me, but all those who love his appearing." And indeed, this was the end of Paul's ministry.

    29:38-29:38

    He's in prison.

    29:40-29:41

    His sentence was due.

    29:41-29:44

There was going to be no escape in Paul's mind.

    29:44-29:44

    That's it.

    29:46-29:52

He had nothing left, no one like Timothy, and Timothy had been a complete failure and he wrote this letter to try to urge him.

    29:53-29:59

So how does Paul help restore Timothy to the man of God that Paul was expecting?

    30:00-30:20

Back in 2 Timothy, chapter 1, verse 2, he says, "Timothy, my beloved son." Timothy is a man who apparently had no earthly father that was actually a father to him.

    30:21-30:44

Paul had become his father and doesn't say my father in the faith or my son in the faith he says my beloved son because Paul had raised him as a son. In verse three he says I thank God whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did is I constantly remember you in my prayer night and day.

    30:46-30:59

Timothy knew Paul and what God had done through Paul, and the knowledge that Paul was praying for him night and day had to be an encouragement to him.

    31:00-31:03

He was not abandoned. God was with him.

    31:04-31:12

In verse 5, we looked at this before, "For I am mindful of this sincere faith within you." It wasn't fake.

    31:13-31:25

Timothy, even though he had looked at himself as someone who was going to take on this challenge and failed, did love God. He did want what was right.

    31:26-31:33

He just got to focus on himself and what he was going to do, and got beaten severely, and was afraid and was withdrawn.

    31:34-31:35

    But his faith was sincere.

    31:36-32:03

Chapter 2. Paul gives him the same advice he gave him before. Don't argue with the false teachers. Don't get entangled in these controversial issues because you're gonna be torn to shreds. There are no rules when they're talking to you and they're smart and they're manipulative and they're political and you're just gonna be drawn into this thing. It'll be a disaster.

    32:04-32:09

That's what he said in 1 Timothy. In 2 Timothy, he points it out in a different way.

    32:09-32:16

    2 Timothy, chapter 2, verses 1 and 2.

    32:17-32:23

"You therefore, my son, be strong." We talked about last week. What does it mean to be strong?

    32:25-32:29

And how do you do it? Well, the answer is you just suck it up and you're strong.

    32:29-32:33

You're going to stand, you make a determined effort that you're going to do no matter what.

    32:33-32:36

not backing down anymore, you're going to be strong.

    32:36-32:42

And that's what Paul told them, be strong in the grace that is in Jesus Christ, not in yourself.

    32:44-32:46

You're not being strong in yourself.

    32:46-32:47

    Timothy, you're a weakling.

    32:48-32:56

Everybody sees you as a loser, but you need to be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

    32:57-33:03

And the things which you have learned from me in the presence of many witnesses, These entrust to who?

    33:05-33:09

Faithful men who will be able to teach others.

    33:10-33:18

Timothy, I want you to redirect your ministry to where I told you to do it in the first place.

    33:20-33:25

Just teach faithful men who can teach others.

    33:25-33:30

Those who want to grow and to learn the Word and they can pass it on to others.

    33:30-33:31

    That's what you're to do.

    33:31-33:36

Teach faithful men. You can teach. Find faithful men and teach them.

    33:42-33:45

    Chapter 3, verse 16.

    33:47-33:48

    Very well-known verse.

    33:50-34:19

Paul reminds Timothy that all Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be equipped, may be adequate, equipped for every good work." What is Timothy's secret weapon? It's the scriptures. It's the scriptures that Timothy is to focus on, and that's it.

    34:21-34:23

Teach the scriptures to faithful men.

    34:25-34:25

    And you know why?

    34:26-34:27

    Because Timothy is weak.

    34:31-34:45

But the Word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of bone and marrow, to the soul and spirit.

    34:49-35:09

Hebrews says, "Behold, all things are laid open and bare to those with whom we have to do." If Timothy teaches the scripture, there is nobody that can stand against God's Word.

    35:10-35:13

Paul goes on in this same passage.

    35:19-35:28

He says, "Be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of your ministry." Let me read beginning actually in verse 1.

    35:29-35:41

Chapter 4, verse 1, "I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is the judge of the living and the dead, and by the appearing of his kingdom." That's a pretty strong charge, isn't it?

    35:42-35:44

Charging him in the presence of God.

    35:45-35:53

Verse 2, "Preach the word." Timothy, stop arguing and preach the word.

    35:55-35:57

Be ready in season and out of season.

    35:59-36:07

Now Timothy said, "Well, you know, when I was in Corinth, people like to listen to my Bible studies, but here they don't want to hear me.

    36:07-36:08

    Well, you know what?

    36:08-36:09

    That's out of season.

    36:09-36:12

So when it's out of season, what are you to do?

    36:12-36:13

    Preach the word.

    36:15-36:18

It doesn't matter what the circumstances are.

    36:18-36:20

It doesn't matter what's going on around.

    36:20-36:23

He says, "Preach the word, in season and out season.

    36:23-36:42

"Reprove, rebuke, exhort with great patience "and all instruction, for time will come "when they will not endure sound doctrine, "but wanting to have their ears tickle, they will accumulate for themselves teacher in accordance with their own desire, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.

    36:42-37:11

But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." So that was the advice that Paul gave Timothy, who restored him by pointing out he loved him as a son, that he prayed for him night and day, that he had a sincere faith that was a true faith, and that he needed to preach the word in season and out of season.

    37:12-37:13

Well, that's the end of 2 Timothy.

    37:15-37:16

    Timothy's never mentioned again.

    37:18-37:26

What a sad book, where Timothy had completely failed, and Paul had poured his life into this church.

    37:26-37:27

    Everybody had turned away.

    37:28-37:31

He knew that there was going to be vicious attacks from inside.

    37:33-37:40

He sent the only one who really cared for people, gave him clear instructions, and Timothy failed.

    37:47-37:53

Well, Paul dropped a little hint as to how victory could be won.

    37:54-38:07

Back up just a page or two in 1 Timothy, and I want to read a verse in 2 Timothy, I want to read a verse in 2 Timothy 3 that is very, very revealing.

    38:10-38:41

2 Timothy in chapter 3, as Paul in the first part of chapter 3 talks about how bad the false teachers are, And then he points out in verses 8 and 9, "Just as Janice and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men will also oppose the truth." Well, Paul, I knew that. I know that there are people that are opposing the truth. They're men of depraved mind, rejected as regards to the faith.

    38:41-38:42

    Yeah, I know that.

    38:44-38:59

But, they will not make further progress, for their folly will be obvious to all, so as those two men came to be.

    39:01-39:03

How could these people be opposed?

    39:05-39:22

You teach the Scriptures, and when the people understand what the Scripture says, when they've studied the Word and been taught the Scripture, it becomes obvious why the false teachers are false and where the lie is, and everybody recognizes they're false teachers, and they don't follow them.

    39:25-39:27

That's it. They're exposed as false.

    39:28-39:30

And as soon as everybody knows they're false, they're finished.

    39:32-39:33

    Did you know that?

    39:33-39:37

But the only people that can make that are ones who actually know what the truth is.

    39:37-39:43

If you know what the truth is, the folly of the false teachers are exposed and they're finished.

    39:44-39:48

That's the secret right there, hidden in the middle of chapter 3.

    39:49-39:51

That's what happens. Their folly becomes known to all.

    39:54-39:59

Well, Timothy's not mentioned again, but I'd like you to turn to Revelation chapter 2.

    40:06-40:09

Revelation chapter 2 was written by Apostle John.

    40:10-40:20

He had been exiled to an island off the coast of Turkey near Ephesus.

    40:20-40:23

He was late in the first century.

    40:25-40:30

Timothy, it turned out, had been martyred probably around 97 AD.

    40:33-41:04

So, John writes a letter, and in Revelation chapter 2, he writes this, "To the angel of the church in Ephesus write, The one who holds the seven stars in his right hand, the one who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this, and listen carefully to what he says about the church, because this is not written to the elders, this is written to the people.

    41:06-41:23

"I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance and that you cannot endure evil men." How in the world did they knew who the evil men were?

    41:24-42:08

He goes on and says, "You put to the test those who called themselves apostles." So Timothy was a little runt that was sent by Paul who was despised to try to oppose people who claim to be apostles and outrank Timothy and they were eloquent and they had all kinds of philosophies and interesting things that they were saying to pull people away from from God and this church. And And it says, "They put to the test those who called themselves apostles, and they were not.

    42:10-42:26

And you found them to be false, and you have persevered and have endured for My name's sake, and have not grown weary." How did they know to put these men to the test? And what was the test?

    42:29-43:06

Well, they found the apostles were false and the test was the scripture. Did what they say match with scripture or not? And they could put them to the test because on one hand they heard the apostle but the other hand they knew what? They knew the scripture. Timothy must have listened to the advice that Paul gave him and gotten his strength together and found some men that he was able to begin to teach. And he taught them because they were able to teach others. And they did love the Lord. They did want to know what the truth was. He taught them the truth.

    43:07-43:32

He taught them how to search the scriptures. He taught them how to test doctrines to find out if they were true or if they were false. The people of the church started saying, "Wait a minute. What you're saying is not in Scripture." And they've showed from Scripture that the false teachers were false, they were exposed, the folly of their false philosophies and doctrines was made evident to everybody.

    43:33-43:45

And it says right here that the whole church now is in a position where they could test anybody, no matter how acclaimed they were, according to the Scripture, because they had to know the Scripture.

    43:47-43:50

So how can a disaster be averted in this church?

    43:51-43:52

    We better know the scripture.

    43:54-44:14

And that better be what we're teaching in small groups so that we can go through passage by passage and understand what the scripture says and what it doesn't say because I guarantee you, Satan is on the march and you're going to be bombarded with all kinds of confusing things and when it's confusing and murky and you don't know what people are talking about, you've got the scripture.

    44:14-44:21

And if you know it, you have clarity, you'll do the right thing, you'll put people to the test, and you'll find out whether or not it's true or false.

    44:21-44:27

And if you do, you'll be able to be... you'll be saved.

    44:28-44:32

You'll be saved from the disasters of following a false teacher.

    44:33-44:40

And boy, we've seen so much shipwreck and disaster in the Christian church because of false teachers that nobody understands.

    44:40-44:45

Nobody can see that what they're doing is false and they're pulling people away from Christ.

    44:45-45:01

And nobody seems to know. They just wander along like lemmings, instead of being sheep, listening to the voice of the true shepherd, and not following false teachers, but following the true shepherd, because they know the voice of the shepherd, they know what's right and wrong, and they know the scriptures.

    45:02-45:06

So the church was saved. The church was saved.

    45:10-45:13

Now that story of Timothy is an amazing story.

    45:15-45:23

There's lots of things that are kind of inferred as you look at different parts of scripture about what he was as a man, and he wasn't much of a man.

    45:24-45:36

He was emotionally weak, he was physically weak, he was despised by other people, he was afraid, he was timid, but he was with Paul for a while and learned Paul's ways, and you want to learn how to do? You learn how to follow Christ.

    45:37-46:07

and he learned to love people and he knew the scriptures and you know what that made him? That made him number one in Paul's sight and he was the only person that could be successful in the church at Ephesus. But you know what happened to him? He must have got the idea that he was like Paul and he was somebody else and he was gonna come in there and straighten things up and he got beaten severely, so bad that he just got discouraged and quit.

    46:08-46:09

    And you know what?

    46:09-46:14

There's a lot of people here who have been in other churches that have been beaten severely and quit.

    46:17-46:19

You know what the message Paul has for you?

    46:20-46:30

Be strong, suck it up and be strong and study the word so that you know right from wrong.

    46:32-46:50

And what we see in Revelation is that however the message got out, there's evidence that the people knew the Word, and those false teachers and vicious wolves that came in were tested by Scripture and they could not stand.

    46:51-46:58

Their folly became evident, the trickery was gone, the deceit was exposed, and they were finished.

    46:59-47:01

But you know, it doesn't end here.

    47:04-47:11

The training of the people in Ephesus came to populate the whole area of Turkey and Asia.

    47:12-47:18

And some of the greatest church fathers who clarified doctrine came from that legacy.

    47:20-47:26

As a matter of fact, there was one who turned out to be in Ephesus about 140 AD.

    47:27-49:55

and he wrote a famous letter to the the the bishop at Rome that said we understand that you're claiming to be the head of all the churches and you know he said but you know what we're going to do we refuse to follow tradition we refuse to follow any man we will follow only scripture and the teaching of the Apostles. He was a minor person, not much is known about him, but he was at Ephesus and was about 65 years old at that time, so he knew Timothy. And the other leaders in that area of Asia joined with him and sent that letter, and the bishop at Rome was furious. He was outraged and tried to excommunicate everyone in Asia that wouldn't bow down to him. And there was a first crisis and finally they said, the guy in Rome, he said, "For sake of peace, settle down." And so that didn't happen. But crisis after crisis and error after error that came up in the Christian Church, there were people from all other areas of the world that were confused and got twisted in their study of Scripture, but the area of Asia remained absolutely convinced that it has to be Scripture alone and the teaching of apostles, period. And that legacy changed the entire church and that area remained a center of truth for 400 years. What we know about studying the Scriptures and the Scriptures alone and not following the tradition of men or the authority of someone who puts themselves up as an apostle or a leader or some other thing and isn't following Scripture comes from here. That's the only place where that really was clear and taught and you know what the legacy is? This church today. This church today is based on the Scriptures as the authority of God and that's what we follow. It is an independent church, it's independent from other men, but it's not independent from God, it's directly through scriptures we follow that legacy.

    49:56-50:46

That was the clarity that Timothy taught and the legacy of what he established in Ephesus when all of Asia had turned away from Paul and his teaching, when it looked like it was a disaster, when he had personally failed, he fell back on the one thing that was still left and that's an irresistible force and a weapon that Satan cannot stand against, which is the scripture. So I hope you've learned a little bit about Timothy, who from a human standpoint wasn't much of a man. In a disastropher background, he was emotionally and physically weak, despised by other people, but he had something that changed the world.

    50:49-50:55

Because Paul was gone, and I'm sure God would have worked through someone else, but he worked through Timothy.

    50:57-51:05

And the keys were that he truly cared about other people, he knew the Scriptures, and It was the scriptures alone.

    51:06-51:16

And the people he taught learned how to put to the test anyone teaching any doctrine to find out if it was true or if it's false.

    51:17-51:22

And be determined and strong that no matter what, they're going to stand on the truth.

    51:23-51:29

Now what I'll tell you is this church is going to be attacked because that is the pattern over and over again.

    51:32-51:35

Does anyone know how to prepare for that attack now?

    51:37-51:40

Do you know what to do in preparation for what Satan has planned for you?

    51:42-51:43

Do you know what to do?

    51:48-51:49

    Get in the Word.

    51:50-51:52

    Learn what the Scripture says.

    51:53-51:54

You say, "Well, you know, this isn't a good time.

    51:55-52:51

"Well, that's out of season." And Paul says, "Preach the Word out of season." And they say, "Well, you know, this is, have some time, well that's also a good time because that's in season. So like I said last week, I'm trained as a teacher and not as a preacher, but this is a message that I think this church needs to hear because in addition to all the other activities and going on, Satan's at work and what I wanted to talk about is the core of what makes a great church, who's opposing it, and the secret way, and it shouldn't be secret, but the way that God has prepared to defend his church, to defend the truth, and to have an impact on the rest of the world.

    52:53-52:54

    Thank you.

  • 00:00-00:08

Well, good morning everyone. I'm Dave Whitcomb. They keep calling me Dr. Whitcomb, which few people do. You can call me Dave.

    00:10-00:17

So I'm very excited to be here today and to be able to share some things out of God's Word.

    00:17-00:23

Now, I'm not a preacher. I'm a teacher. So I'm going to use a lectern and we'll have an outline.

    00:24-00:28

But what I want to talk about today is extremely important.

    00:29-00:31

And some of the things you're going to hear today you've never heard before.

    00:32-00:34

And I want you to study your Bible afterwards.

    00:34-00:41

I have a detailed outline so you can go back and see whether or not the things that we're discussing are true.

    00:42-00:52

Now, the other thing I want to point out is that the church that we're going to be studying over the next two weeks is the church in Ephesus.

    00:52-00:56

And this is one of the most amazing churches in the New Testament.

    00:56-01:00

It's amazing because of what happened at this church.

    01:00-01:13

And I'm going to be telling you a story of the church of Ephesus and how it rose to be one of the greatest churches ever and how it was attacked by Satan and almost destroyed.

    01:14-01:24

And so the lessons that we see from this church are very, in Ephesus are very applicable to the church that we have here.

    01:25-01:28

So if I can have the first slide, I hope they worked.

    01:29-01:58

Okay, so the Bible passages that we're going to be looking at are in three areas, and the first two are ones that we are going to be studying today. If you do not have a Bible, I want you to raise your hand and we'll bring Bibles that we have available in the back so that you can have one. If you already have one of the Bibles, we'll be looking at page 603 and 633.

    01:59-02:03

That is where the book of Ephesians and the book of Acts is located.

    02:04-02:11

And so we'll start in Acts chapter 19 and begin there.

    02:12-02:19

So the introduction tells us about the story that's given in Acts chapter 19 and Acts chapter 20 in Ephesus.

    02:20-02:25

And we're going to be taking an overview. We're not going to go in depth on verse by verse.

    02:25-02:35

We're going to take an overview and then you can study during the week to see whether or not the things that we talked about are accurate and all the other treasures that are hidden here.

    02:36-02:37

So if I can have the next slide.

    02:39-03:11

So this is the city of Ephesus and what you see in this map is the Mediterranean Sea and on the far right is where the the Holy Land and Israel is located with Jerusalem being the bottom right city and the arrows that you see in the little like purple and yellow things are the missionary journeys of Paul and And what the book of Acts does is tells us the acts of the apostles, what they did.

    03:12-03:21

And from about the middle of the book of Acts to the end, it tells us each of the cities that Paul visited and what he did there.

    03:22-03:27

And you can actually go through the book of Acts and trace out exactly where he went.

    03:27-03:31

And this Bible chart shows exactly where he went.

    03:31-03:35

What I've circled in yellow is Ephesus.

    03:35-03:38

And Ephesus was an incredibly important city.

    03:39-03:44

It was actually one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire at this time.

    03:45-03:49

It had almost 500,000 people that were living in this area.

    03:50-03:52

It had a history for being there for thousands of years.

    03:53-04:03

And it actually housed one of the seven great wonders of the world, which was a temple to the goddess Artemis, also known as Diana.

    04:04-04:12

It was massive, pure marble pillars, and it was the largest building that had ever been built to that time.

    04:12-04:15

It was indeed one of the seven great wonders of the world.

    04:16-04:26

It got destroyed because Ephesus is right in the middle of the battles between Greece and Syria, and so a lot of traffic went through there.

    04:26-04:32

And a new temple was built after the old one was destroyed that was even greater.

    04:32-04:38

It had 125 pure marble pillars that were over 60 feet tall.

    04:38-04:48

It was a massive area and it was dedicated to this goddess of fertility and of...

    04:49-04:51

It turned out to be an area of prostitution.

    04:52-05:03

They actually had a marble street that went from the city to this other thing and had a brothel that was built two stories high, a huge area that facilitated this effort.

    05:04-05:11

There was also an incredible trade where people from all over the world came to this area because it was in the middle of a trade route.

    05:11-05:26

And throughout the whole Roman Empire, all over that part of Europe and the Middle East, They've dug up artifacts that have come from this area that are artifacts that looks like statues of Diana.

    05:27-05:30

And so whatever was built there spread throughout the area.

    05:31-05:32

So it was a center of pagan worship.

    05:33-05:44

It was one of the most important cities for Rome because it dominated this whole area that was called Asia by the Romans, but is actually the area shown on this map.

    05:44-05:49

So that's where this is located.

    05:49-05:55

Now the last thing I want to point out here on this map is that Paul came through here twice.

    05:56-06:01

The first time is the purple, and we're going to be talking about the purple where he came from Corinth and went to Ephesus.

    06:02-06:08

And the second time is in light green where he bypassed Ephesus and went to a city below called Miletus.

    06:09-06:13

And so those are the two cities that are going to be important, and we'll talk about that.

    06:13-06:15

So let's go to the next slide.

    06:16-06:20

Now the story picks up in Acts chapter 19.

    06:21-06:25

And so we're picking up sort of in the middle of Paul's journey.

    06:26-06:34

And he traveled from Greece over to Ephesus.

    06:34-07:04

And in verse 1 it says, "And it came about that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus and found some disciples. Now what kind of disciples were living at Ephesus? And it turns out that they were Jewish believers who had heard the message of John the Baptist, that the Messiah was coming, and they were dedicated, they wanted to see the Messiah.

    07:04-09:38

And Paul, in the next few verses, tells them his name is Jesus Christ. And he led Jews to the Lord. And as we look at the second point, is that beginning in verse 5, it says, "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came in them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. And there were about twelve men." So now we have a small nucleus of people who are believers who had been looking for the Messiah, they knew the Old Testament, and they were instructed in more depth exactly what God had done, what he had done through Jesus Christ and about salvation. Now the interesting thing is the Jews, when they heard the gospel and believed, started speaking in tongues. And what did that mean? If you go back and read Acts chapter 2 later on, we're not going to spend time here, what you see is that it was a sign to Jewish believers. The words that were spoken were not unintelligible to Jewish people. It was unintelligible to unbelievers and Gentiles. Because when the Jewish people at the Day of Pentecost, and that were all gathered in Jerusalem, when they heard the believer speaking, they understood exactly what was being said, and they recognized it was, it sounded like it was in their native language, and they understood exactly what was said. There were words praising God. It wasn't spreading the gospel, it was words of praise to God. They understood what it said, and they said, "What does it mean?" And Peter told them, "It means that a new time has coming as was prophesied in the Old Testament. And he told them about who Jesus was from the scriptures. And so the sign was to Jewish believers who were looking for the Messiah. But now that we have the scriptures and the word has gone out, there are no more tongues as was described here. So here was a sign to Jewish believers that confirmed something miraculous was happening and And it was the beginning of the church, and Paul begins the church here.

    09:40-09:47

Now, in verses 9 through 10, something very disturbing happened.

    09:48-09:50

And you know what? This happened over and over and over again.

    09:51-10:09

"But when some were becoming hardened and disobedient, speaking evil to the way before the multitude, He, meaning Paul, withdrew from them and took away the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

    10:11-10:21

And this took place for two years, so that all who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.

    10:22-10:27

So that church started in a school, perhaps much like this.

    10:27-10:34

The difference was that Paul taught there daily for an additional two years.

    10:34-10:38

Can you imagine having the Apostle Paul as your teacher for two years?

    10:39-10:49

Now, at Harvest, we don't have this facility to teach daily for two years, but we have something equivalent.

    10:49-10:52

We have home groups with people who study the Word.

    10:52-10:57

And we saw that there's a home group on Wednesday that the pastor's teaching.

    10:57-11:03

And I teach one in the Oakland area and Shadyside on Tuesdays.

    11:03-11:04

And there are other ones as well.

    11:04-11:16

So you have the opportunity to get into the Word and to be taught almost daily and understand exactly what the Bible is about and what it means to you.

    11:18-11:28

Now, as we go on and look at verses 17 through 20, we'll see what happened.

    11:29-11:46

And so there's a description that we'll skip over about some conflict that happened, but it really drew attention to the power of the word and to the authority that God had given through Paul.

    11:46-12:01

And in verse 17, this miraculous event where a holy, where an evil spirit was in a man and Paul came up 'cause other people couldn't throw this demon out.

    12:01-12:15

And Paul, when he came up, the demon said, we know Paul and he was thrown out of, and this man had the demon thrown out of him.

    12:16-13:19

In verse 17 it says, "And this became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived in Ephesus. And the fear of the Lord fell on them, and the name of the Lord was magnified. Many also of those who had believed kept coming, confessing and disclosing their practices. And many of those who practiced magic brought about their books together and began burning them in the sight of all, and it to be 50,000 pieces of silver. So we see is that the effect of the word was so powerful that people's lives were changed and they were committed to the gospel and to the teaching of Paul. And as we saw that the word spread throughout all that area of Asia, everyone heard of the Word of the Lord and what had happened at that point. The importance is that the name of Jesus was magnified.

    13:20-16:42

This brought, did not bring attention to Paul and his followers, it brought attention to Jesus and it was a powerful witness. Now just of interest to me, 50,000 pieces of silver, it turns out a year's wage was about 250 pieces of silver, so that is equal to 200 years of annual salary, or more than five million dollars. So that's a lot of stuff that a lot of people brought and burned publicly, and there was a complete change in that city. The impact was unbelievable of a small church beginning with 12 people within a couple years. That is a great church. It's a church where the word is going out and having an impact on people's life and it rocked the entire city. But as you remember from the map, Paul didn't stop there. He had other churches and other things and he moved on to other places. Now Paul did not abandon the people in Ephesus and just move on, he sent them a letter to help them understand how to live the Christian life. And it's one of the most important letters in the New Testament to understand these principles. So let's move forward to the book of Ephesus that is on page 633. Now this book is pretty amazing and what I'd like you to do is to look at Ephesians chapter 1 and the end of Ephesians chapter 6 and just hold up the pages because I want you to see that even though this is an amazing part of the scriptures and has so much in it, it's only a few pages long. It's amazing to see what's in there and we're going to do a brief overview but it's just actually a pretty short little letter but thousands of books have been written about this and it's been studied by millions of people for 2,000 years and still we haven't gotten to the bottom of it and completely understood the implications of this book. And here, the new church at Ephesus received this letter. Now I'm going to quickly go through the entire book and give you an idea of the types of things that are in it. And this is outlined in your handout. So under point two, Paul sent a letter recognized as God's Word, and it's called Ephesians. In chapter one, we're going to begin by just looking at one verse, and that's verse three. It said, "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. Now it goes on and it talks about how God the Father was involved in your salvation. It talks about how Jesus Christ paid the price for your salvation. It talks about the Holy Spirit sealing you in God's family.

    16:43-21:02

But it goes through in sequential detail and it turns out God has blessed us in over 30 ways. And if you study this, there are 30 things that happened at time of salvation that God's done for you. There's so much that we learn from studying chapter 1. But I'd like to move to chapter 2. Chapter 2, it also says something that was very important both for the Jews and the Gentiles who lived in the city of Ephesus. Now, beginning in verse 11, it talks about how the Jews who have had all the spiritual blessings and all the teaching, everything that God has poured out through the Jews to spread around the world, was now being brought together with the Gentiles. The Gentiles who had nothing, now we're going receive everything. And this is as they were united into a new body called the church. Now the church began on the day of Pentecost and we mentioned that when I spoke of Acts chapter 2. Did you know that Pentecost is actually one of the major Jewish ceremonies and gatherings and as I mentioned when I spoke of tongues. People came from all over the world to be in the city of Jerusalem during the Day of Pentecost. And they had just a very important series of things that occurred. But the highlight was when the priest got up in front of the congregation and he had two loaves of bread. And the loaves of bread were lifted and brought together as a unified sacrifice to God. Did you know the Jews didn't know what the two loaves stood for? For thousands of years in their history as they worshipped on the day of Pentecost, they were bringing these two loaves together and what we find out in the church it is the Jews and the Gentiles together that become a unified people of one body that provide a sacrifice of praise and service to our God and Father. So every time we think of Pentecost, the beginning of the church, it begins by having the Jews and Gentiles united. It points this out as we see in verse 16 of chapter 2. It talks about how there had been a disagreement and competition between the Jews and the Gentiles, but the purpose was that, he says, he might reconcile them both, both the Jews and Gentiles, into one body to God through the cross, having put to death the enmity. This is exactly what happened. They were brought together. And as we go on to verse 19, it says that you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the Saints and are of God's household." The people in Ephesus recognized that now they were brought into God's family, they were part of the history, they were spiritual children of Abraham. All the blessings that God promised they could benefit from through being united through Christ into one body. This is very important for them to know. Chapter 3 goes on and describes how this was such an important event and that Paul was given the privilege of explaining this. But what happens is that it's not just the external, it's the internal as well. So look at chapter 3 and verse 16. It says that he would grant you according to the riches of his glory to be strengthened with power through his spirit in the inner man. It's not just external blessings, it is the Holy Spirit working inside of each person in the inner man.

    21:03-22:48

The people of Ephesus needed to know that, they needed to be reminded that this was happening with them. Chapter 4 goes on and talks about what does it mean to part of the body. This is one of the most important chapters in the Bible that talk about what a body is. Look down on verses, in chapter 4, beginning in verse 11. It says that he gave some apostles and some prophets and some evangelists and some pastors and teachers. So these are special gifts he gave to build up the church. Now what we learn is the Apostles were the and in chapter 2 and 3 it talks about how the Apostles are the foundation of the church. But once the foundation is built, you don't need to build the foundation anymore, and the role of the Apostles has ceased. There were some prophets. Those were people that were given special insight into the church so that they could explain what happened until the scriptures were written. It says there are some evangelists, and those who go out and preach the gospel so that others are saved. And I do not have the gift of evangelism, but some of you probably do. And he gave some as pastors, and we have people here who are pastors. Those are those who are very good at leading one-on-one and helping to nurture and protect and strengthen people, and I don't have the gifts of a pastor. And some teachers, and you know what? I recognize that my gift is I don't have the gift of an apostle. I can't perform any miracles at all.

    22:51-22:55

I don't have the gift of evangelism. I don't have the gift of a pastor.

    22:55-22:59

But I do have the gift of teaching, and that it's actually what my job is.

    22:59-23:11

I've spent my entire career teaching at a university to graduate students and medical students, but I enjoy studying and I enjoy putting things together and teaching, And that's really what my gift is.

    23:11-23:13

But what is the purpose within the church?

    23:13-23:26

Well, it says here in verse 12, "The purpose of all of these is for the equipping of the saints for work of service to the building up of the body of Christ." Did you know that?

    23:27-23:29

The church is not about the pastors and teachers.

    23:30-23:31

    It's not.

    23:33-23:34

That's not the purpose of the church.

    23:35-23:40

The purpose of those people are to help you in your ministry.

    23:41-23:49

Every one of you has a ministry, and the purpose of the teachers, and the evangelists, and the pastors are to help you.

    23:49-23:50

    That's what they're for.

    23:51-23:54

And as we look at this a little bit further, it explains this in more detail.

    23:56-24:54

It says in verse 15 that speaking the truth in love, "We are to grow up in all aspects unto Him who is even the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body being fitted and held together by that which every joint supplies according to the proper working of each individual part." Now who's the individual parts? You are. Every person is a part and each person has to function in the church and they have to be connected to each other or you can't function. Now I studied medicine and physiology and what we study is how all the pieces work together. That's otherwise the body doesn't work. They don't work independently but it says here that Christ is the head of the church, and so all the information comes from Christ to the body.

    24:56-25:04

And so each part has to work together to cause the growth of the body for building up itself in love.

    25:04-25:05

    Now, what is love?

    25:06-25:11

Love is unconditional care and giving for other people.

    25:11-25:19

It is self-sacrifice for the benefit of others, and that is the critical part of the church.

    25:20-25:23

Well, that wasn't enough because the people at Ephesus wanted to know, "How do we live?

    25:24-25:30

How do we put this into action?" And in chapter 5, he tells us, look at chapter 5, verses 1 and 2.

    25:33-25:45

"Therefore, be imitators of God as dear children, and walk in love just as Christ loved you and gave himself up for you as an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.

    25:47-25:48

So you know what your example is?

    25:49-25:55

Christ, you have to live like Christ did in love and sacrifice and service to others.

    25:58-25:59

Well, how do you do that?

    26:00-26:02

We don't know how to do that.

    26:04-26:10

And that's why I put another reference down, 1 Corinthians chapter four, verses 16 and 17, you can look up a little bit later.

    26:11-26:15

Paul said to the Corinthians, "You have to live in a way that Christ did.

    26:16-26:27

But in case you don't know how to do that, I'm sending you Timothy who knows how I live because I'm following Christ." So Christ is example, I show you how to follow Christ.

    26:28-26:30

Timothy learned from me and you learn from Timothy.

    26:32-27:03

Did you know that we're gonna maybe at a future time look at 1st Timothy chapter 3 and it talks about leadership in the church. And you know what it takes to be a leader? It's nothing about education. It's people within the congregation that everyone recognizes knows how to follow Christ. And if somebody, they're called elders and deacons, and if somebody doesn't know what to do but they want to follow Christ, here's an example of someone who who has walked before you that knows how to do it.

    27:05-27:19

Furthermore, from the middle of chapter 4 to halfway through chapter 6, it gives you examples of every area and stage in life, and what to do, how to behave, how to think, how to interact with others, what your attitude should be, and how to bring glory to God.

    27:19-27:23

The people in Ephesus needed to know, and Paul gave them these details.

    27:24-27:26

    Last, in chapter 6.

    27:28-27:29

    This is the scary part.

    27:31-27:41

In chapter 6 and verse 13, it says, "Therefore take up the full armor of God." Now, why do you need armor?

    27:43-27:44

It's because there's going to be conflict.

    27:46-27:51

"That you may be able to resist in the evil day." And did you know there's going to be evil days?

    27:56-28:01

And they were coming to this church, and having done everything to stand.

    28:03-28:10

So in the battle, it's not he who puts on his armor, it's the person that stands at the end and takes it off.

    28:10-28:11

That's the one who the victor is.

    28:14-28:21

If you look up at the beginning of this, verse 10, it says, Finally, be strong in the Lord.

    28:22-28:23

What does it mean to be strong?

    28:26-28:29

You may not feel physically strong, but what does it mean to be strong?

    28:29-28:33

And it doesn't tell you exactly how it says be strong.

    28:34-28:40

So if there is a difficult time or conflict, you are to be strong, but it's not in your own strength.

    28:41-28:42

It's in the strength of his might.

    28:44-28:48

And Paul goes on and describes what is the full armor of God.

    28:48-28:50

How do you be prepared when the evil day is coming?

    28:51-28:51

And can I tell you something?

    28:52-28:56

We're gonna see that Paul saw the evil days were coming in the church of Ephesus.

    28:57-28:57

    And you know what?

    28:58-29:00

Evil days are coming to this church.

    29:03-29:05

There's gonna be major conflict in this church.

    29:06-29:07

    And you know why?

    29:09-29:11

Because wherever God's working, Satan's working.

    29:14-29:14

    Did you know that?

    29:16-29:18

That is the history of the world.

    29:24-29:32

Well, in addition to teaching for almost three years and for sending the book of Ephesus, Paul also sent Timothy to help.

    29:32-29:38

And we're going to look at Timothy next week because I never would have sent Timothy and it was a disaster.

    29:40-29:46

Let's move back to the book of Ephesus, excuse me, the book of Acts.

    29:47-29:53

And I want to pick up the story because what we see is Satan attacks.

    29:56-29:57

    Satan attacks.

    29:58-30:00

You know what? We are not unaware of his schemes.

    30:00-30:05

There's two ways that he attacks, and the first one is from the outside.

    30:06-30:14

And so let's just pick up back in Acts chapter 19, page 603 again.

    30:18-30:23

And in verse 23 to 27, we learn about a guy named Demetrius.

    30:24-30:33

It says in verse 23, "About that time there arose no small disturbance concerning the Way." Now, the Way in my Bible is capitalized, because it's the Way of salvation.

    30:34-30:38

It is the way of God, the whole counsel of God in the church.

    30:39-30:40

And there was no small disturbance.

    30:42-30:53

It says, "For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, was bringing no little business to the craftsmen.

    30:55-31:20

And he gathered them together with the workmen of similar trades and said to you, "Men, you know that our prosperity depends on this business." And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all.

    31:22-31:52

And there's not only danger of this trade of ours falling into disrepute, But also the temple of the great God Artemis has been regarded as worthless, and shame whom all of Asia and all the world worship should even be dethroned from her magnificence." So the first thing he points out is, "Hey, we're losing money off of this." As I told you, throughout all of the Roman Empire, these shrines have been found everywhere.

    31:53-32:27

That was a big business, very big business, and suddenly everybody turns away and they're burning their books. You know, five million dollars worth of books being burned in the entire area of Asia, hearing about the word and a considerable number of people turning away and changing their lives and living a life that's honoring to God. That's bad business, if you're in the wrong business. And so what he does, he stirs them up and he's not saying, Well, people say, "Well, business isn't so good. We don't feel so bad." But you know what? It also affected their lifestyle.

    32:29-32:33

They liked the prostitutes. They didn't have a two-story building.

    32:34-32:40

They liked the lifestyle. They liked the sin that was part of that pagan culture.

    32:40-32:45

Many people whose hearts were hardened did not like what was happening.

    32:45-32:48

They did not like the light shown on them. They did not like to be seen as evil.

    32:48-32:51

And it got to the point where they couldn't stand it anymore.

    32:56-33:30

As we continue to read here in verses 28 and 29, "When they heard this, they were filled with rage, and they began crying out, saying, 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!' And the city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one account into the theater, and they dragged along Artemis and Aristocarius, Paul's traveling companions from Macedonia, and they started a riot running through the church, through the city, and gathering up people, and they were about ready to destroy everybody associated with the church in a massive riot.

    33:33-33:34

But you know what? God protected them.

    33:36-34:12

And it's fascinating to see what happened. In verse 34, it says, "But they pulled out a man when they recognized that he was a Jew." "A single outcry arose from all of them, as they lasted for about two hours, 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!'" In verse 35, "And when, after quieting the multitude, the town clerk said to them, 'Men of Ephesus, what man here is there that does not know that the city of Ephesus is the guardian of the temple of the great Artemis, and the image which fell down from heaven?

    34:12-34:33

since then, these are undisputable facts, you have to keep calm and do nothing about it." And goes on to say, "If there's a problem and there's been a loss of money through cheating, then you can take it to the courts." Now this is amazing because what God did is use the government to protect the church.

    34:34-34:38

There's a very important passage in Romans chapter 13.

    34:38-34:45

You know what? Every government is given its authority from God.

    34:45-34:51

And the purpose of the government is to suppress evil and to encourage good.

    34:51-34:56

And the agents of the government are appointed by God for that purpose.

    34:56-34:58

Now, sometimes they're better and sometimes they're not.

    34:59-35:05

But we are to support the government and pray for the government because the government protects God's work.

    35:07-35:15

Doesn't always happen, but that is a principle that we see, and certainly our freedom to worship is protected by the government.

    35:16-35:21

And we need to pray for our leaders that this important principle is not lost.

    35:21-35:24

And certainly here's an example here of where that happened.

    35:29-35:36

Now, this plan of Satan in this outward attack started good and ended poorly.

    35:38-35:42

But you know what? He didn't give up. And he never gives up.

    35:42-35:53

And we know that even now in parts of the world like Somalia and Northeast Africa and other places, he is using people to attack Christians and kill them. And we know that's happening.

    35:55-36:00

There's a magazine, we get "Voices of the Martyrs" that just outlines all the horrible things that are happening to Christians.

    36:01-36:04

But you know what? It strengthens the church.

    36:06-36:37

But I'm gonna tell you something that's even more worse more insidious and has a tremendous impact and it continues even today Now let's look in Acts chapter 20 Now I'm gonna just pick up in verse 17 and 18 Because Paul had left and he kind of circled back and it says from Miletus He sent to Ephesus So you remember I showed you the picture on the map where Ephesus was in the middle of the circle and Miletus was right below it?

    36:37-36:47

So Miletus was at Port City and Paul came in there and called the elders of the church to all come down from Ephesus so they could have a little retreat.

    36:49-37:06

And they came down and met Paul and he reminded them, he said, "You know yourselves from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I spent, I was with you the whole time." And he goes on and explains his ministry.

    37:08-37:19

Now he talked about all the happy things that happened, but now I'm going to show you a prophetic word from Paul about what was going to happen that is terrifying.

    37:20-37:30

And his answer is unexpected and really strange.

    37:36-38:43

In verse 27, again Paul says, "I did not shrink from declaring you the whole purpose of God." Now let's look at verses 28 through 30. He says, "Be on your guard for yourselves and for the whole flock from which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the church." Now this is kind of an interesting thing because he called the elders who were overseers and pastors or shepherds which is the word pastor. So these individuals were all elders but they had different roles as overseers, teachers, and pastors within the church. But this is the leadership of the church. He says again in verse 28, "The Holy Spirit has made you overseers to shepherd the church of God which he has purchased with his own blood." It is Jesus' church, he is the head. Verse 29, "I know that after my departure Savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock." Okay?

    38:45-39:32

Here's the worst part, verse 30, "And from among your own selves, men will arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples from their selves." False teachers are going to come into the church and they were already there, and they were among the elders that Paul had brought down to speak. It's like Jesus when he was in the upper room and said to the disciples, "One of you will betray me." They didn't all turn to Judas and say, "Well, he's obviously the only one dressed in black, it's him. They said, "No, is it I?" Nobody knew who it was.

    39:34-39:59

Judas was so trusted that he was the treasurer for the whole group. He was the most trusted person of the twelve disciples, yet Jesus himself said, "You know, one of you is a devil." And nobody could tell who it was. But eventually it came out in a time of crisis. And so nobody knew who it was, but they knew that there was infiltration among them.

    40:03-40:06

So Paul gives them an answer in verse 31.

    40:06-40:14

It says, "Therefore, be on the alert. Remember that night and day for a period of three years, I did not cease to admonish each one of you with tears." And here's the answer.

    40:14-40:20

"Now I commend you to God in the word of His grace." That was his advice.

    40:22-40:23

Who were they? I want to know who they were.

    40:25-40:29

I want to know how to find out who they are and how to oppose them.

    40:29-40:32

I want to know how to get rid of them. I want to take action.

    40:33-40:34

But you know what he said?

    40:37-40:39

God and His Word is sufficient.

    40:40-40:49

If you know God and His Word, you will be protected and the church will be protected from savage wolves against innocent sheep.

    40:51-40:52

    How does that happen?

    40:57-40:59

Well, I'm going to talk about that next week.

    41:02-41:19

But what I'd like to point out now is that Paul is not the only person that knew that Satan's plan was to deceive, to confuse, to infiltrate, to bring heretical doctrines in to destroy the church.

    41:21-41:27

Did you know that Peter, in his second epistle, that was one of the main things that he warned about?

    41:28-41:46

If you turn to 2 Peter chapter 2, which is on page 259, Peter at the end of chapter 1 talks about how the holy scriptures are given by the inspiration of God.

    41:47-42:17

holy men were driven to write exactly God's Word, and so that the Word of God is pure, it is accurate, it is complete, and it is ours. But in chapter 2 verse 1 he says, "But false prophets also arose among the people," speaking of the Old Testament, they had true prophets and false prophets. As a matter of fact, at the time of Jeremiah, all the prophets were false.

    42:17-42:29

All of them were saying that God is gonna prosper our country and God is gonna raise up Israel and God's gonna get rid of the Babylonians that were on the march and he's gonna save us, all of them.

    42:29-42:30

And you know what God told Jeremiah?

    42:33-42:35

He says, "The city's about to be destroyed.

    42:35-42:37

"In fact, the sword is already at the throat.

    42:38-42:44

"It's gonna be complete destruction "and there will be no salvation." And you know what Jeremiah's response was?

    42:45-42:52

Why are you lying to the people by telling them that there's safety when in fact, the sword is at the throat?

    42:54-42:55

And you know what God's response was?

    42:57-42:58

    Those prophets aren't mine.

    42:59-43:00

    They're not my prophets.

    43:00-43:01

    They say they are.

    43:01-43:03

They're dressed with the right robes.

    43:04-43:10

They're in the right places as part of the prophets of Israel, but they're not his prophets.

    43:10-43:11

    And they're speaking lies.

    43:15-43:23

So false prophets arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you.

    43:23-43:55

There will be false teachers among you, secretly introducing destructive heresies, planting doubt, questioning doctrines, questioning God's Word, saying, "Well, maybe that doesn't really apply." Even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.

    43:55-44:07

And many, many, many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be maligned." And you know what I have to say to that?

    44:07-44:08

    "Boy, isn't that church history?

    44:10-44:11

Has that ever come to be true?

    44:11-44:14

Haven't we seen entire denominations destroyed?

    44:17-44:23

Entire Christianity brought into disrepute because of false teaching which led people to do the wrong thing.

    44:24-44:26

How do you defend yourself against this?

    44:26-44:28

How do you know if somebody's teaching false or truth?

    44:29-44:29

    What do you do?

    44:29-44:31

    What should the church do?

    44:31-44:37

Where we can't even tell by looking around who's a false teacher and who's a true teacher.

    44:38-44:42

As a matter of fact, Satan himself doesn't go around with a red suit and horns.

    44:42-44:50

He masquerades as an angel of light and his ministers also masquerade as ministers of light.

    44:51-45:02

Lastly, in Jude, who is one of Jesus' brothers, in the last book of the Bible before Revelation, so on page 622, gives a stern warning.

    45:05-45:19

In verse three, he says, "Beloved, while I was making every effort to write to you "about our common salvation, "I felt it necessary to write to you, "appealing you to contend earnestly for the faith." Who is he writing to?

    45:20-45:31

Well, it says in verse 1, "Jude, a bondservant of Jesus and a brother of James, to those who are called." If you're a Christian, you are called. If you're a Christian, you are called.

    45:32-45:35

If you're a Christian, you are called. And that goes to you.

    45:36-45:42

You are to contend earnestly for the faith in whatever capacity God has given you.

    45:43-45:46

And why should you contend earnestly for the faith?

    45:46-46:12

which was once for all delivered to the saints in verse 4, "For certain people have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out of this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of God into lasciviousness and deny our Lord, our Master and Lord Jesus Christ." So what have we learned today?

    46:12-46:32

What have we learned today? What we see is a church in a town of Ephesus, an influential city, that was a center of pagan worship, where Paul began teaching in a small school daily. But as people came to know the Lord, something happened.

    46:36-47:23

What was it? Paul was in Ephesus, but it turned out that the people took the word throughout all of that area called Asia. It wasn't Paul going out, it was the people that heard the word, evangelized, and told everyone about this way through Jesus Christ. That's really highlighted again in back in our main passage in Acts about how this happened. The second thing we learned, let's go to the next one.

    47:28-47:40

In Acts 19, 20, it talks about how the Word was prevailing, and if all this good was happening, why was there a conflict? Why was there a problem?

    47:44-47:53

It's because not everyone wants the gospel. They love money, they love their lifestyle, they love other things, and there will be opposition to God's Word.

    47:54-48:04

And we see that Satan is leading the attack both from the outside in, but in a more sinister way from the inside out.

    48:05-48:24

So this church that within three years had had a impact over the whole known world, where miraculous things had happened, was protected by the government, was going to be attacked from the inside, from their own leaders.

    48:25-48:31

And we'll see next week that the entire church was almost completely destroyed.

    48:32-48:42

That Paul knew it was coming. He just said, "Well, you know, God be with you. Here's your Bible." And left.

    48:44-48:51

And then when things got desperate, he sent them the worst possible choice that I could have imagined.

    48:52-48:55

He said, "Here, you try to handle this mess." And it was a disaster.

    48:56-48:58

But you know what? That's not the end of the story.

    49:00-49:06

And if you come back next week, we'll finish talking about this and understand how God's ways work.

    49:06-49:14

how he builds the church, but how he preserves it, and how people can be protected from destruction.

  • 00:00-00:05

As we conclude our series, Jesus introduces the church.

    00:07-00:19

And in Matthew chapter 13, Jesus gives seven parables that describe a period of history that has never before been revealed up to that point.

    00:20-00:25

Jesus was describing what life was going to be like during the church age.

    00:28-00:33

And Matthew chapter 13 is so important for us to pay attention to because these are the days that we live in.

    00:33-00:42

Jesus said, "Here's exactly how it's going to be." So several years ago, I have this guy come into my office, just kind of walked in off the street.

    00:42-00:53

He had this canvas bag over his shoulder, and I was about 85% sure there was a body in that bag.

    00:53-00:54

It was that big and full.

    00:54-00:58

when this guy kind of came in, he was a little unkempt.

    00:58-01:04

He came shuffling in with this monstrously huge bag and wanted to talk to me.

    01:08-01:10

And we sit down, he puts the bag down.

    01:11-01:16

And I gotta tell you the whole time, I'm like looking at this bag out of the corner of my eye, like what's in there, what's in it.

    01:17-01:38

So he sits down and he said, you know, I'm the King of Africa." And I said, "Oh." I didn't realize continents had kings, but thank you for gracing me with your presence, your Highness.

    01:39-01:55

And he told me this story about how his parents, who would be, thank you, the king and queen of Africa, formerly, how they were murdered by Americans.

    01:57-02:07

And he went on for a solid hour and told me how his parents were murdered by the women of America.

    02:08-02:19

And after he told me this story, he got up, grabbed his bag and walked out of my office.

    02:22-02:23

No surprise, what was I doing?

    02:26-02:27

    Like, what was that?

    02:29-02:31

    He didn't ask for money.

    02:32-02:33

He didn't ask for a bus ticket.

    02:33-02:34

    He didn't ask for food.

    02:35-02:36

    He didn't ask for anything.

    02:39-03:04

And I left there, or he left me there sitting my office going, "So what do you want me to do about this?" And I want to encourage you, every time you go to church, you should leave with that mentality. And that what's the application point? I should leave here with something, right?

    03:06-03:26

You shouldn't, and to be honest with you, I've failed doing my job if I get up and and you're sitting there like me in my office that day, that you're like, "Why did he tell us all this? There should always be a'so what'." Well, that's what Jesus is getting to here in Matthew chapter 13.

    03:26-03:28

We're just going to look at two verses today, okay?

    03:29-03:30

We've been going through these parables.

    03:36-04:38

Verse 51, Jesus said, "Have you understood all these things?" And they said to him, "Yes." And he said to them, "Therefore, every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and and what is old. Jesus just wrote out all these stories and some explanations to the disciples about what life would be like after his death and resurrection during the church age and they couldn't walk away with that information going interesting just as we can't walk away from the last several weeks of diving parables, we can't just walk out of the doors and go, "Huh, fascinating stuff.

    04:39-05:17

Jesus sure gave us a lot of information. Interesting. I hope that's a Jeopardy category. I'll be all over that." We can't walk out like that. What we need to do is what Jesus called his disciples to here own up. We need to take responsibility for what we know. Right? Now Jesus said, now understand, don't misunderstand what I'm saying. Jesus said, I will build my church, right? But how does he do that?

    05:18-05:24

The answer is he does it in you and through you, right?

    05:24-05:40

Is that how Jesus is at work in the church? He's working in you and he's working through you. Who is responsible for the growth? Well, Jesus is, but he's doing it in us and then through us. Who is responsible for making disciples?

    05:41-05:45

Well, Jesus does it in us, but he does it through us.

    05:46-05:51

Who's responsible for making our Sunday morning worship service excellent?

    05:52-06:05

Well, Jesus is, because if it's not empowered by him, glorifying him, experiencing his presence, then it's a failure.

    06:06-06:08

But he's going to do that how?

    06:09-06:27

He's going to do that through us, right? So the question that Jesus asked that I want to ask you, do you understand? And if you're visiting with us for the first time, we've been going through Matthew 13, as I mentioned, for the past several weeks.

    06:27-07:01

Go back and read those parables. Jesus said, "Here's what life's going to be like during the church age." But the question, first of all, He asks, that I want to echo. Do you understand? Do you understand the parables? Do you understand that good and evil are going to coexist during the church age? Do you understand that this is going to start small and it's going to grow huge? Do you understand that Jesus Christ is going to influence everything.

    07:03-07:12

Do you understand that the only way to become a part of the kingdom is to purchase all that Christ is by giving up everything that you have?

    07:17-07:17

    Do you see?

    07:21-07:23

How there's going to be a separation at the end.

    07:25-07:26

    Do you understand?

    07:29-07:33

Now this is more, please hear me, this is more than a comprehension of facts.

    07:34-07:40

Like, yes, yes, yes, I remember there's like a story about a mustard seed and treasure in a field and yeah, yeah, yeah.

    07:40-07:44

I understand the facts. This is deeper than the facts.

    07:44-07:45

    Let's make it more personal.

    07:47-07:48

    Here's what Jesus is saying.

    07:49-07:57

He says, "Do you understand that you can expect rejection from people?" Do you understand that?

    07:57-07:59

Remember in the first parable, the parable of the sower?

    08:01-08:06

Some people are hard-hearted, some people are shallow-hearted, some people are crowded-hearted.

    08:08-08:17

And somehow we're so like shocked that we share the gospel with someone and they don't receive it, or they lash back at us, or we're the religious nut, or whatever.

    08:18-08:20

Do you understand that that's going to happen?

    08:21-08:23

That's what Jesus is saying here. Do you get that?

    08:24-08:24

    It's going to happen.

    08:25-08:30

You understand that? Do you understand?

    08:33-08:38

We're going to be sharing the space here on the earth with people that don't love the Lord.

    08:38-08:46

Do you understand that? We're sharing the space you're going to be working with and going to school with and.

    08:48-08:52

Maybe even living with as family members, people that don't know and love the Lord.

    08:54-08:56

So what do we do? Convert or kill, right?

    08:57-09:01

No. That was the whole point of the parable of the wheat and the tares.

    09:02-09:08

Jesus said it's not our job to start going around like wheat, wheat, wheat, wheat, wheat, tare, kkkkk, wheat, wheat, wheat, wheat, tare, kkkkk.

    09:09-09:10

    That's not our job.

    09:11-10:06

Our job is to love people and to share the covered. That's not our job. Not our job. Everybody say it's not my job. Now, it's not my job either. So do you understand that? Do you understand the power of the kingdom? We talked about how the kingdom started with, oh really, Jesus Christ, and 12 and 11 and 120 and 3000 and boom and compound growth throughout the last couple of thousand years to the point that Christ's influence is spreading over every corner of the globe.

    10:08-10:11

And we can even translate that locally.

    10:12-10:22

We saw how even what God's doing here started very small and is continuing to grow.

    10:23-10:25

Do you understand that that's how it's going to work?

    10:27-10:35

That's why, you know, we've never talked about, well, what if the church fails, or what if the church flops, or, you know, statistically, you know, three out of four church plans fail. Did you know that?

    10:36-10:37

    We've never talked like that.

    10:37-10:39

We believe that Christ has called us to this.

    10:39-10:44

He's empowering this. So why would we make allowance for failure?

    10:45-10:48

Well, okay, you know what? Jesus said the kingdom is going to start small and grow big.

    10:49-10:52

And I can see that translating locally. We're going to start small and we're going to grow.

    10:54-10:57

You understand that? Do you understand the cost?

    10:59-11:02

Do you understand what it means to follow Christ? You don't just add Him.

    11:03-11:06

    Like, I'm a decent person. I have a good job. I have 2.5 kids.

    11:06-11:08

You know what? I'll add Jesus to my resume.

    11:10-11:11

Jesus said the kingdom isn't like that.

    11:11-11:14

When you see the value of who Christ is.

    11:16-11:24

And everything that he stands for and everything that he promises and delivers, you're going to joyfully give up everything you have.

    11:27-11:29

    To receive Jesus Christ.

    11:30-11:31

    You understand that?

    11:33-11:35

You understand the implications of that?

    11:36-11:40

When somebody isn't ready to come to that point, what that means is they haven't understood the value of Christ.

    11:44-11:45

    Do you understand that?

    11:48-12:03

Then last week, do you understand that hell is a real place and that real people really go there?

    12:03-12:04

    Do you understand that?

    12:06-12:08

    Do you understand that?

    12:11-12:13

And I just wrote down in my notes, urgency.

    12:14-12:16

Do you understand how urgent this is?

    12:19-12:27

We can't sit around and play Monopoly and entertain each other, not to do anything wrong with Monopoly, but we can't sit around and entertain each other for years on end.

    12:28-12:28

    Oh, you know what?

    12:28-12:31

We ought to think about getting the gospel outside of the doors of this auditorium.

    12:33-12:34

    Urgency.

    12:35-12:38

And not just us as a church, you as a disciple.

    12:39-12:40

    Urgency. Urgency.

    12:43-12:49

Lost people are dead, separated from God, and they're heading for an eternity, separated from God.

    12:49-12:51

    You can't save them.

    12:54-12:55

But you know someone who can.

    12:59-13:04

And that's why the Bible says God has entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation.

    13:05-13:10

God says, "I have the eternal gospel of my Son that turns dead people into alive people.

    13:10-13:16

Here, I'm giving it to you. Get it out there." But do you understand the urgency?

    13:18-13:26

It's not like there's heaven for Christians and then like diet heaven for non-Christians.

    13:26-13:31

Heaven light, heaven free, sweetened with splendor heaven.

    13:32-13:44

There is being in God's presence for eternity and there is eternal torment.

    13:45-13:49

A place of separation, a place of outer darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    13:50-13:52

It's a real place, according to Jesus.

    13:53-13:59

And I know you got all these people out there now, "Oh, hell's not really a real place." You know what? I'm going to go with Jesus on that one.

    13:59-14:02

How about you? How about you? Does that sound good?

    14:02-14:05

If we're going to pick sides, I'm going with Jesus on that one.

    14:06-14:09

He says it's real, therefore this is urgent. Do you understand that?

    14:11-14:12

    We're not playing games here.

    14:13-14:13

    Urgency.

    14:15-14:17

So, what's my part in the kingdom business?

    14:18-14:19

Let's look back at the text.

    14:19-14:42

Jesus said, "Have you understood all these things?" They said to him, "Yes." They're like, "We are... we're hearing you." As my brother Dale says, "We're picking up what you're putting down, right?" "We understand what you're saying." Jesus said, "Okay, therefore..." OK, did you get that?

    14:43-14:45

    Contingent on your understanding.

    14:46-14:50

Because if you don't understand, you won't see the need for what is coming.

    14:53-15:08

Therefore, if you understand, every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.

    15:08-15:10

So two things this morning, you ready?

    15:10-15:12

Drop this down in the back of your bulletin.

    15:16-15:19

First of all, you are responsible for what you know.

    15:20-15:21

    I am responsible.

    15:21-15:27

Here's the first thing Jesus is saying, I am responsible, I am responsible, cut that out of the tape.

    15:27-15:31

I am responsible to be a student of the word of God.

    15:34-15:38

I am responsible to be a student of the word of God.

    15:40-15:43

Jesus said, therefore, every scribe, let's talk about a scribe for a second.

    15:43-15:44

    What is a scribe?

    15:45-15:47

A scribe is a student of scripture.

    15:49-15:55

In Jesus' day and prior to, the scribe was known as the theologian and the preacher.

    15:57-15:59

Famous scribes, can you think of a famous scribe?

    16:00-16:01

How about Ezra from the Old Testament?

    16:03-16:11

Ezra was someone who read the law and helped people understand the law.

    16:12-16:13

Okay, that's what a scribe is.

    16:13-16:18

I read the word of God, seeking to understand the word of God.

    16:18-16:20

It starts with being a student.

    16:21-16:22

You're like, well, this is for preachers, right?

    16:23-16:27

No, every disciple, every follower of Jesus.

    16:28-16:31

That's why you go back to verse 36 in Matthew 13.

    16:32-16:33

    The disciples came to Jesus.

    16:33-16:35

Can you explain that parable to us?

    16:36-16:37

That's the attitude of a scribe.

    16:37-16:38

    I want to know.

    16:39-16:40

    I need to know.

    16:40-16:41

    I have to understand.

    16:42-16:44

It's being a student of scripture.

    16:48-16:57

You see, my job is to preach and to teach, but the end game of my job is for you to get into the word yourself.

    16:59-17:00

    Understand that.

    17:01-17:02

You need to be a student of the word.

    17:08-17:11

I'm not here to replace that for you.

    17:12-17:12

    I'm not.

    17:14-17:20

And if your mindset is, well, that's why I go to church, to learn about the Bible.

    17:21-17:23

And really that's the only time that I learn about the Bible.

    17:23-17:27

And I'll wait until next Sunday to learn more about the Bible than I've failed at my job.

    17:32-17:42

My job is to help and to encourage and to sort of stoke that in you to say, "I'm going to get in God's Word for myself." Everyone in here should be getting in God's Word for yourself.

    17:44-17:46

I want to know, I want to understand.

    17:48-17:50

But it's not for the sake of head knowledge.

    17:50-17:51

Look at the next thing Jesus said.

    17:52-17:59

scribe who has been trained for the kingdom, trained for the kingdom.

    18:00-18:51

My question is, what are you doing right now to train? What are you doing right now to train? Now obviously he's directing this at his disciples. This is being directed at saved people. Again, I don't want there to be any misunderstanding like, "Oh, I have to train to become a Christian." No. If you understand if you are a born-again believer, you're in training. And the question is, what are you doing right now to train? What are you doing right now to train? Here's what I want you to do. On your bulletin, on your outline, I want you to just write down what you're doing right now to train. And growing of your knowledge of God's Word.

    18:54-18:54

    What are you doing?

    18:56-18:58

To train and growing in your knowledge of God's Word.

    18:58-18:59

    What are you doing?

    19:03-19:06

You see, people train for all kinds of things, don't they?

    19:07-19:09

People train for a new job.

    19:11-19:13

People train for the Olympics, right?

    19:14-19:16

People train if they're going to run a marathon.

    19:18-19:29

If you went to those people and said, "Hey, what are you doing to train?" Do you think they would look at you with a blank expression going, "What do you mean?

    19:31-19:31

    What are you doing?

    19:31-19:34

Okay, so you're going to be in the 2012 Olympics in London, right?

    19:34-19:35

    Yeah?

    19:35-19:36

What are you doing to train?

    19:37-19:37

    Huh?

    19:38-19:39

    What do you mean?

    19:40-19:48

What are you doing to train for the Olympics?" Well, I guess I haven't been eating as many Twinkies.

    19:48-19:50

Like what have you been doing to train?

    19:54-19:59

Being a disciple is following Jesus.

    19:59-20:01

    It's learning from Jesus.

    20:01-20:02

    It's applying what we learn.

    20:03-20:06

Being a disciple means you're in the classroom for the rest of your life.

    20:06-20:09

What was the punchline when I got into ministry?

    20:10-20:11

    Because I don't like school.

    20:13-20:14

You know what I didn't like about school?

    20:15-20:22

I didn't like sitting down at a desk and studying, and I hated writing papers.

    20:22-20:23

    Hated it.

    20:25-20:29

Sitting down, studying, writing, revising, editing, studying, restudying.

    20:32-20:43

So in Bible college, I turn in my last paper and I walked out of the professor's office, arms raised, I'm done.

    20:46-20:47

You know what the punchline is?

    20:49-20:54

I have to do more studying and writing and preparing now than I ever did in Bible college.

    20:54-20:57

Seriously, I look back at my Bible college days, I'm like, man, that was easy.

    20:58-21:00

Now I have to do it every week.

    21:00-21:02

I have to write a paper every week.

    21:02-21:05

I have to study a different portion of Scripture, what?

    21:07-21:07

    Every week.

    21:09-21:11

And I'm not complaining, I'm just saying it's a little ironic.

    21:11-21:14

But, you know, the same is true for you.

    21:15-21:16

    You're always in God's classroom.

    21:17-21:17

    Always.

    21:18-21:19

    Always.

    21:21-21:26

I haven't met any Christian who's been walking with the Lord for any amount of time saying, "You know, I got it all figured out.

    21:27-21:29

I don't even read my Bible anymore, I just have it all figured out.

    21:31-21:32

I don't even go to church.

    21:33-21:35

Preacher's not going to tell me anything, I don't know.

    21:37-21:40

You're in the classroom the rest of your life.

    21:43-21:50

That's why in Harvest Speak, when we talk about being a disciple, we talk about worshipping Christ and walking with Christ and working for Christ.

    21:51-21:51

    How are you doing?

    21:53-21:54

Are you training for the kingdom?

    21:56-21:57

    Give me some pointers.

    21:57-21:59

Well, here's some pointers, jot these things down.

    21:59-22:01

Here's some things you can do to train.

    22:03-22:04

How about, first of all, church attendance?

    22:07-22:08

    It is important.

    22:09-22:18

It is important that we come together and worship the Lord together and pray with each other and get in God's word together.

    22:18-22:19

    I think it's important.

    22:19-22:19

    It's important to me.

    22:20-22:20

    Is it important to you?

    22:22-22:23

    It's important to Jesus.

    22:23-22:24

    He died for the church.

    22:28-22:31

This is important business that we do on a Sunday morning.

    22:32-22:42

That's why I encourage you, that's part of your training is coming, church attendance, coming early, coming ready to worship, coming Bible in hand, pen in hand.

    22:43-22:45

I know there's gonna be an outline and I'm gonna take some notes.

    22:45-22:46

I'm going to be a student.

    22:50-22:51

I'm going to be a student.

    22:52-22:53

    Also your personal study.

    22:53-22:54

    Do you have a plan?

    22:58-23:03

Do you have a plan? Personal study in God's Word for yourself.

    23:05-23:10

And also as we saw the video, we want to see everybody involved in a small group.

    23:10-23:13

And here's what we've been telling people. You have something to offer people.

    23:17-23:22

You need to be pouring into people. And there's times that we need people to pour into us, right?

    23:24-23:36

Look, there's times that I need my brothers in the Lord, that I need to go like, "Hey man, I need you to pray for me right now. I'm having a hard time." That's all part of the training. Training for the kingdom.

    23:37-23:39

Every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven.

    23:42-23:43

    This isn't a passive thing.

    23:47-23:56

This is, "I'm going to put myself in a position that the Lord's going to be at work in me." That's what it is. You can't do it. He does it.

    23:57-24:03

But you have a choice to make as to whether you're going to put yourself in a position or not. Right?

    24:04-24:06

So I'm responsible to be a student of the Word of God.

    24:07-24:10

Secondly, I'm responsible to be a teacher of the Word of God.

    24:12-24:14

I'm responsible to be a teacher of the Word of God.

    24:16-24:21

That's where Jesus said, "Okay, every scribe who's been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like," what?

    24:21-24:23

    A master of a house.

    24:25-24:31

Some translations might say a householder, who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.

    24:32-24:33

    What is the householder?

    24:33-24:44

Well, in Jesus' day, the most trusted slave of wealthy families would be known as the householder or the house manager, so to speak.

    24:44-24:49

And it was his job to manage the house's storeroom.

    24:51-24:53

Do we still use the term pantry?

    24:54-24:54

    Is that still a term?

    24:56-25:00

Okay, this is like the big rich people's pantry, okay?

    25:00-25:02

That has all the stuff in it.

    25:02-25:04

And his job was to manage their stuff.

    25:05-25:08

The food, the clothing, the things needed to care for people.

    25:09-25:11

He had to keep it well stocked.

    25:11-25:13

He had to know how to distribute.

    25:14-25:19

Now when it says treasure here, Don't think of, you know, a chest full of gold coins.

    25:20-25:28

What he's talking about is the storehouse, the pantry, the closet, full of things old and new.

    25:28-25:30

What's this old and new thing about?

    25:33-25:40

Before Jesus started this teaching, the disciples had the Old Testament.

    25:42-25:45

They knew of God's law, of God's dealings with Israel.

    25:45-25:49

They had the law, they had the prophets, the disciples had that.

    25:49-25:56

That's why we saw in Matthew 13, Jesus said, "I'm going to tell you a mystery." Not like the riddle of the Sphinx or anything.

    25:56-26:02

The mystery is this is something that has never before been revealed that I'm about to share with you.

    26:03-26:04

There's a period of time called the church age.

    26:05-26:08

To the disciples, this would have been brand new.

    26:09-26:11

That's what Jesus is talking about here.

    26:11-26:15

You had the old. Now I'm introducing you to the new.

    26:19-26:21

The other scribes had the Old Testament.

    26:21-26:24

Now, disciples, you have the mystery of the kingdom.

    26:25-26:30

But here's the thing, the new truth added makes the old truth fresh.

    26:33-26:39

Or to put it another way, we really can't understand the New Testament without the Old Testament.

    26:40-26:44

We really can't have a full understanding of the New Testament without the Old Testament.

    26:44-26:45

    And here's what I mean.

    26:48-27:12

If I just came up to you and said, "Hey, 2000 years ago, this man died on a cross for you." And you're like, "Okay, history tells us that countless thousands of people have died on crosses, right?

    27:12-27:14

It was the common form of execution.

    27:15-27:25

So, why does this one man and this one cross, why does that make any difference versus all of the other ones?

    27:27-27:41

But you see, it's when you have the understanding of the Old Testament to understand that sin brought death, But God in His love through the Levitical system provided an animal sacrifice to cover over sin.

    27:43-27:49

And what God was doing was basically taking Israel to kindergarten to say, "I want you to learn something very fundamental.

    27:52-27:53

The wages of sin is death.

    27:55-28:10

But because I love you, I'm going to make a provision for a sacrifice for you." And throughout Old Testament history, God kept pounding that message home.

    28:13-28:16

A sacrifice will cover your sin. A sacrifice can cover your sin.

    28:16-28:27

It was to prepare for the ultimate sacrifice, Jesus Christ, who didn't merely cover our sin, but what? Take our sin away.

    28:29-28:32

That's what he's talking about here with the old and the new.

    28:35-28:38

The new truth added makes the old truth fresh.

    28:38-28:41

We can't understand the New Testament without the Old Testament.

    28:41-28:47

That's why, church, that's why we can't be stuck in a form of Old Testament legalism.

    28:49-28:51

    We can't get stuck there.

    28:52-28:53

And a lot of churches do.

    28:55-28:57

get stuck in a form of legalism.

    28:58-29:12

Like, well, you know you can't get a tattoo because Leviticus says that's a sin and complete misunderstanding of the purpose of the Old Testament law.

    29:12-29:13

    Complete misunderstanding.

    29:13-29:16

But what do we do? We try to introduce that to the church.

    29:17-29:19

"Oh, you want to be a good Christian? Okay, here's our rules.

    29:20-29:21

If you're a Christian, you don't play cards.

    29:21-29:23

If you're a Christian, you don't go to the movies.

    29:23-29:31

If you're a Christian, you have to wear this, or you can't wear this, or you have to have your hair like this, or you can't have your hair like this.

    29:33-29:37

And if you don't have hair, I don't know what to tell you because we don't have a rule for that yet.

    29:38-29:41

And we start introducing all these rules.

    29:41-29:45

And what we essentially do, church, is we try to make the church like sort of a new Israel.

    29:46-29:50

Like, okay, if we want God to be happy with us, here's the rules we got to keep.

    29:52-30:21

That's wrong. The other side of the spectrum that we can't get stuck on is some form of New Testament mysticism, where we completely misunderstand the purpose of the whole counsel of God. It's understanding, being a student so that We can be a teacher.

    30:21-30:22

What do I mean by this?

    30:23-30:30

Well, to put it in some other terms, I'm gonna throw a few illustrations out and some of these will resonate with you, I'm sure.

    30:32-30:34

What does it mean to have the old and the new?

    30:35-30:42

Well, we have the ABCs and we have Shakespeare at the same time.

    30:45-30:52

We have two plus two and we have calculus at the same time.

    30:53-30:57

We have musicians, we have Do Re Mi.

    30:58-31:00

I can't remember, what's the rest of them?

    31:01-31:02

    Right, that one.

    31:03-31:08

We have that and we have Beethoven's Fifth at the same time.

    31:10-31:22

But listen, learning the basics, learning the ABCs, learning the two plus two, learning the Do Re Mis, Learning the basics doesn't have an end goal of just understanding the basics.

    31:22-31:23

    Do you get that?

    31:24-31:27

You don't teach children the alphabet just so they know the alphabet, do you?

    31:28-31:30

Why do you teach children the alphabet?

    31:31-31:31

    Anyone?

    31:32-31:33

    Shout it out.

    31:33-31:34

Why do we teach children the alphabet?

    31:35-31:37

So they can read, right, and write.

    31:38-31:39

There's an end goal in mind.

    31:40-31:41

That's why we teach that to children.

    31:42-31:45

We don't teach it just so they can sing along when Sesame Street's on.

    31:46-31:46

    There's an end game.

    31:48-31:49

Why do I need to know this?

    31:49-31:53

Because having the fundamentals will help you understand the full.

    31:57-32:02

That's why sometimes we go back to basic grammar, basic math, and basic music.

    32:02-32:08

Sometimes we go back to those things in those fields so we can understand the fullness.

    32:10-32:10

    Are you still with me?

    32:12-32:13

Do I need to back up for anybody?

    32:15-32:20

You're like, "Oh, please no." But this is Jesus' point.

    32:23-32:25

We have the old, now we have the new.

    32:27-32:29

New truth added makes the old truth fresh.

    32:31-32:33

And so much of the Bible is like that.

    32:34-32:36

For example, under the old covenant, it was tithing.

    32:38-32:42

the Old Testament tithe was like 20-some percent when you added it all together.

    32:45-32:55

The purpose of that, the purpose of God teaching tithing in the Old Testament, was the same purpose that we teach children ABCs.

    32:56-32:57

    Did you get that?

    32:58-33:03

In the Old Testament, we have sacrifice, killing an animal.

    33:04-33:12

The reason we have Old Testament sacrifice is the same reason that we teach children the ABCs.

    33:15-33:16

    Right?

    33:18-33:22

In the Old Testament, God actually tells you how to love people.

    33:27-33:32

for the same reason that we have the ABCs, because now the full has come.

    33:35-33:36

    We learn about God.

    33:37-33:52

We learn the fundamentals as God was preparing all of history for a season, a future chunk of history which we now live in, where God actually lives in us and through us.

    33:53-33:53

    Radical.

    33:56-34:01

So the question is, what are you doing with what you have learned?

    34:04-34:08

You've learned the ABCs, but you've also learned Shakespeare, so to speak.

    34:09-34:24

We've spent time, haven't we, these past several months, we've been through Jonah, we've gone through some portions in Genesis, and we've been doing Old Testament and New Testament and understanding what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.

    34:24-34:27

And the question is, what have you done with what you've learned?

    34:30-34:31

What have you done with that?

    34:33-34:40

Like the disciples, we can't walk away with eternal spiritual truth and just say, "That's interesting.

    34:42-34:51

We're responsible for what we know." First of all, you're responsible in your home. In your home.

    34:52-34:54

Whose job is it to disciple your children?

    34:56-34:58

A lot of people think that's the church's job.

    34:59-35:00

    It's not.

    35:01-35:03

    That's your job as parents.

    35:04-35:05

    What's our job?

    35:05-35:06

Our job is to assist you.

    35:07-35:12

Our job is to come alongside you and help you.

    35:13-35:21

Yeah, even during worship this morning, the purpose of removing children from the service isn't that, Okay, parents, we got this.

    35:23-35:30

The end game of that is to help provide a distraction-free environment so you can grow in the knowledge of God's Word.

    35:30-35:31

    Did you know that?

    35:32-35:35

We don't have the audacity to try to replace you as parents.

    35:35-35:36

    That is not our job.

    35:38-35:40

What are you doing with what you learned?

    35:41-35:43

First place you need to look is in your home.

    35:44-35:47

Are you discipling your children, those of you who have children?

    35:50-35:52

What are you doing with what you have learned in the church?

    35:55-35:56

Are you part of a small group?

    35:58-36:09

Are you looking at, "How can I apply what we've been learning these past several weeks?" What are you doing in your community with what you've learned?

    36:11-36:18

You know, I got a lot of messages and emails and such from the sermon last week.

    36:20-36:25

Never a comfortable thing to spend, you know, 40 to 45 minutes talking about hell.

    36:27-36:29

Got a lot of response to that message.

    36:30-36:34

And I'm sure there are people who think, "You know what? You're right.

    36:34-36:40

My neighbor doesn't know the Lord. He's gone to hell." God should really do something about that.

    36:42-36:44

When God is saying, "Do you know what I did?

    36:45-36:46

Is I put you next door.

    36:47-36:59

That's what I'm doing about it." Right? If you're a believer, God's like, "I'm living in you, and I put you right next door to this guy that needs to hear the gospel." You know, the people that I work with, they really need to know the Lord.

    37:00-37:02

And God says, "You know what? I was thinking the same thing.

    37:02-37:04

That's why I got you a job there.

    37:05-37:10

So you can look for the opportunity to share what you've learned.

    37:12-37:16

You're going to encounter people throughout your week that I'll never meet.

    37:20-37:25

So whose job is it? Whose responsibility is it to look for that opportunity?

    37:26-37:27

Point to whose job that is. Point.

    37:29-37:31

No, not me. I'm pointing for myself. You point at yourself.

    37:32-37:36

Everybody's like, "It's your job, Jeff." No, it's your job.

    37:39-37:43

I pray the Lord's at work in the people that cross my path.

    37:45-37:46

    You do the same, okay?

    37:48-38:01

Responsibility, it has to start with the understanding of the kingdom, understanding what God's done for us in Jesus Christ, and understanding what He's going to do through you.

    38:01-38:57

a result. So do you understand? You understand? You understand? Then you're a scribe. What are you doing to be a student? Do you understand? Then you're a householder? What are you doing to manage what God has entrusted to you? Who are you pouring into? I want you to write that down on your bulletin too. I meant to mention that earlier. Write down who is in your life right now that you are pouring into. Maybe it is your kids. Maybe there's somebody that you're working Maybe it's somebody here in the church that you've been kind of mentoring or something.

    38:57-38:57

    Write that down.

    39:02-39:02

    Do you understand?

    39:06-39:08

Well, then let's pay attention in class.

    39:11-39:14

Because the next time class rolls around, God might have you be the teacher.

    39:15-39:15

    Amen?

Open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 13.

    00:11-00:16

Today, we're going to talk about hell.

    00:20-00:24

And for those of you who know me, I like to have a good time.

    00:25-00:34

I like to laugh, and I like to share silly illustrations and tell jokes and obscure movie references.

    00:34-00:40

And there's going to be none of that today, because this is serious, okay?

    00:41-00:45

This is as serious as it gets.

    00:47-00:48

    This is no laughing matter.

    00:50-00:52

And as you're turning there, I just want to review.

    00:53-01:02

We've been going through these past several weeks some stories that Jesus told, and I would encourage you, this is what I do in my Bible.

    01:03-01:14

Every time you come across Jesus talking about the kingdom of heaven, I just highlight that phrase, "kingdom of heaven" or "kingdom of God" in the other Gospels He refers to it as, that's how it's recorded.

    01:15-01:16

    But I highlight that.

    01:16-01:21

You're going to be surprised how many times Jesus talks about the kingdom of heaven.

    01:21-01:29

The question is, "Well, what is that?" He's always talking about the kingdom of heaven is like this, and it's like this, and it's like this, and it can be compared to this.

    01:32-01:34

Well, recall what we've been studying.

    01:37-01:49

In the Old Testament, the Bible says that the Messiah was going to come, and the Messiah was going to suffer, and the Messiah was going to reign over all the earth.

    01:52-02:03

But there's something not in the Old Testament, and that is the period of time between the suffering of the Messiah and the reigning of the Messiah.

    02:04-02:06

That's why you see this in the Gospels.

    02:07-02:10

So many times they tried to make Jesus king.

    02:12-02:16

And remember the triumphal entry, they were waving the palm branches.

    02:16-02:19

That's the equivalent today of waving the American flag.

    02:19-02:31

They're saying, "He's going to be our king and overthrow the Romans." They were looking for a Messiah who would be the political king, because they knew in the Scriptures He was going to come and He was going to reign.

    02:33-02:38

Even in Acts chapter 1, remember what the disciples asked Jesus?

    02:38-02:46

"Lord, is it at this time you will restore the kingdom to Israel?" They thought, "Okay, Messiah comes, Messiah suffers, Messiah reigns," just like the Old Testament.

    02:47-02:50

But in Matthew 13, Jesus said, "I'm going to declare to you a mystery.

    02:50-02:55

I'm going to tell you something that's never been revealed before." What's that?

    02:56-03:02

There's a period of time between the suffering of the Messiah and the reigning on the earth of the Messiah.

    03:03-03:04

    There's a period of time.

    03:06-03:07

And we call that the Church Age.

    03:08-03:10

That's what Jesus referred to as the kingdom of heaven.

    03:12-03:18

And the reason these parables are so important is because this stuff is in our face.

    03:19-03:21

This is the day that we live in, right?

    03:22-03:29

If Jesus is describing the church age, we should sit up and say, "Well, what's it going to be like? Because those are the very days that I live in.

    03:30-03:42

These are the days that my parents lived in and my children are living in." With the first parable, the parable of the sower, the question Jesus answered was, "How are people going to respond to the gospel?

    03:43-03:54

The gospel message is going to go out. How are people going to respond?" And we saw that many people are going to reject the message for different reasons, and some are going to receive the message, and you're going to know it because they're going to multiply.

    03:55-03:57

They're going to keep passing that message on to others.

    03:57-04:03

Then with the parable of the wheat and the tares, the question that Jesus answered is, "Well, what do we do with all these unbelievers?

    04:03-04:06

Okay, you're telling me we're going to have this world full of unbelievers.

    04:06-04:12

What do we do with them? If they don't convert, we kill them?" And Jesus said, "No, no, no, no, no, no. That was the point of that parable.

    04:13-04:16

    That's not your job. That's God's job.

    04:18-04:24

And a day is going to come when the angels are going to come with Christ and take care of that business.

    04:24-04:26

    In the meantime, there's coexistence.

    04:26-04:35

Good and evil is going to live on the world at the same time." And then we looked at the parables of the mustard seed and the leaven, and the question is, "Well, how far can this go?

    04:35-04:39

You're telling me we're going to be living in this world with all these unbelievers.

    04:39-04:40

Well, how far can it go?

    04:40-04:42

And Jesus said, I'll tell you how far.

    04:42-04:43

    It's like a mustard seed.

    04:45-04:49

The smallest herb seed becomes a tree.

    04:50-04:51

That's what the kingdom of heaven is like.

    04:51-04:54

It's going to start really, really small and it's going to grow out of control.

    04:54-05:01

And we talked about the influence of Christianity all over the world, like the little bit of leaven that leavens the whole lump.

    05:03-05:06

And then last week, the question was, well, what's it worth?

    05:08-05:11

What is the kingdom of heaven worth? Can you put a price tag on it?

    05:12-05:13

Jesus said, "I'll tell you what it's worth.

    05:14-05:28

It's like somebody finding something that's so valuable that they're willing to sell everything that they own happily in order to obtain one thing." That's what we talked about last week.

    05:29-05:30

    Jesus Christ is the treasure.

    05:31-05:42

Jesus Christ is the pearl of great price. Jesus and everything he represents eternal life and forgiveness of sins and adoption as sons and daughters of the king.

    05:42-05:51

That's the pearl. And when you realize the value that Jesus Christ has, you will joyfully give up everything to follow him.

    05:53-05:57

Well, the question that we're going to be looking at today is this one.

    05:59-06:00

    How does it end?

    06:01-06:12

Okay, Jesus, you're telling us that there's a period of time, good and evil are going to coexist, and how's this going to end?

    06:15-06:17

And that's the parable of the dragnet.

    06:18-06:20

Take the parable of the wheat and tares.

    06:20-06:28

Jesus in this parable, we're going to see he's talking about a harvest and he's talking about a separation.

    06:32-06:35

Even our name, there are a lot of churches named Harvest.

    06:35-06:35

    Have you noticed?

    06:35-06:36

People come up to me all the time.

    06:37-06:41

Are you connected with the harvest in Katanning or this harvest or that harvest?

    06:41-06:41

    No.

    06:43-06:46

It's a great name for a church, but understand this.

    06:46-06:51

It's a very serious name, because every time the Bible talks about harvest, it's talking about God's judgment.

    06:53-06:55

    It's a serious thing, right?

    06:57-07:03

So Jesus is going to focus in this parable on what happens to the people that reject the kingdom.

    07:03-07:05

What happens to people that reject the king?

    07:05-07:08

What is ultimately going to happen to those people?

    07:10-07:16

In the end, there's going to be an eternal separation of the damned from the redeemed.

    07:18-07:21

This is a loving warning about hell.

    07:22-07:33

Believe me, I don't sit down in my office and think, "What would I like to teach on?" If that were the case, I wouldn't be teaching about hell.

    07:36-07:40

But as we go through God's Word, as it presents itself, it comes up.

    07:42-07:46

It's a loving warning from Jesus Christ.

    07:47-07:52

And my job isn't to make up the message, my job is the megaphone, I'm just to broadcast the message.

    07:52-07:56

And I want to pass on this loving warning about hell.

    07:58-08:03

Especially in our day, it's been ignored.

    08:04-08:05

You ought to understand, why is it so important?

    08:05-08:06

    Well, it's been ignored.

    08:08-08:08

    It's been ignored.

    08:09-08:10

Hell has been reduced to a fairy tale.

    08:13-08:13

    Cartoon stuff.

    08:16-08:24

How many times have we seen in the cartoons our children watch, or in the comic strip, in the newspaper, some silly depiction of hell?

    08:27-08:28

    It's just been ignored.

    08:30-08:34

    That's just, that's fable stuff.

    08:35-08:36

You don't really believe that, do you?

    08:38-08:39

    Why is this so important?

    08:39-08:41

Another reason is hell's been diminished.

    08:42-08:42

    It's been diminished.

    08:45-08:48

How many times have I heard people tell me this when I've shared the gospel with them?

    08:48-08:52

They've said something like, "I'm not going to mind being in hell because all my friends are going to be there.

    08:52-08:59

That's where the party's gonna be. And my response is, get a biblical clue.

    09:00-09:05

Why don't you read the Bible and see what hell actually is according to God?

    09:06-09:09

And you're gonna find it's not the frat party that you think it is.

    09:11-09:19

And hell's become trivialized. People use the word all the time and it trivializes it.

    09:19-09:20

    You know what I mean?

    09:22-09:36

People say things like, "You know that Andrew McCutcheon, he's a hell of a ball player." "That was a hell of a stake that I had." And using that...

    09:36-09:37

    There's even a...

    09:37-09:37

    There's even a...

    09:37-09:38

    Do you see that cheese?

    09:38-09:39

    Hell of a good cheese?

    09:40-09:42

    That stuff trivializes it.

    09:42-09:45

We make it just part of the common vernacular.

    09:45-09:46

    Don't do that.

    09:49-09:54

Actually, I read a poll this week, 31% of adults believe that hell is an actual location.

    09:54-10:05

Only 31% believe that hell is an actual location, quote, "a place of physical torment where people may be sent." Jesus spoke about hell more than he talked about heaven.

    10:05-10:06

    Did you know that?

    10:07-10:08

    Look through your Gospels.

    10:12-10:13

He talked about hell more than heaven.

    10:13-10:18

Jesus Christ preached about hell more than all the other preachers of scripture combined.

    10:20-10:27

Take every preacher in scripture and look at what they've said and stack it up with what Jesus Christ said, and that's key.

    10:30-10:35

I mean, all scripture is from God and we're not saying any part of scripture is elevated any higher than any others.

    10:36-10:39

But understand this, God incarnate himself.

    10:42-10:44

Preached on hell more than the prophets did.

    10:45-10:48

So warning. It's a loving warning.

    10:51-10:52

So let's get to the parable.

    10:54-10:56

    Matthew 13, verse 47.

    10:58-11:07

Jesus said again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish of every kind.

    11:10-11:16

When it was full, men drew it ashore and sat down and sorted the good into containers.

    11:19-11:20

    But threw away the bad.

    11:24-11:32

So it will be at the close of the age, the angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace.

    11:34-11:41

In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    11:43-11:46

So jot these things down on your outline, the parable of the net.

    11:46-11:58

Let's talk about the parable for a few moments, then we're going to do more of a systematic study, a short, a very short systematic study on what the Bible says about hell.

    11:58-12:02

The parable of the net, notice again, Jesus used such common pictures.

    12:02-12:13

I mean, we're removed in time and in geography from when this was originally said.

    12:13-12:20

Understand Jesus was saying this in the Middle East a couple thousand years ago.

    12:21-12:25

And sometimes we have to do the homework to understand the context.

    12:25-12:30

But understand the people that Jesus was talking to, they were totally resonating with this stuff.

    12:31-12:38

When Jesus was like, you know, the King of Heaven's like a little bit of leaven that went into the whole lumpy, people were like, "Oh yeah, that's how my aunt makes bread." And they were totally getting that.

    12:38-12:43

Or mustard seed, "Oh yeah, we have those in our backyard." And this was another common picture.

    12:43-12:45

    It was fishing.

    12:49-12:52

Actually, some of Jesus' disciples were fishermen.

    12:53-12:58

And in Jesus' day, as it is still done today, there were three ways to fish.

    13:01-13:04

The most common way we think of when we think of fishing, what do we typically think of?

    13:05-13:06

Like the rod and the hook, right?

    13:07-13:10

Well they did that in Jesus' day as well, Matthew 17, verse 27.

    13:12-13:17

Also casting a net, this is sort of a, you know, one or two man job.

    13:17-13:24

We're talking about the smaller net, throwing the smaller net out, depending on the size of the net.

    13:24-13:29

Matthew 4, verses 18 through 19, talks about the smaller net.

    13:30-13:34

In this passage, Jesus is talking about a drag net.

    13:34-13:40

Now this net was much larger, much larger than the other nets.

    13:41-13:44

Some of them were up to a half mile long.

    13:47-13:48

Now how did the drag net work?

    13:48-13:55

Well, one end of the drag net was actually attached to the shore, And the other end of the net was attached to the boat.

    13:56-14:00

Now the top of the net would have had something to keep the top afloat.

    14:00-14:02

Think of some kind of floaters or something on top.

    14:03-14:06

And the bottom of the net would have had weights to make it go down.

    14:07-14:14

And what the boat would do was it would make a big circle and that net would form a giant wall.

    14:15-14:28

So when that boat would make the big circle around and go back to the shore, just picture how the net as a giant wall would have gone around and captured everything within that circle and pulled in.

    14:34-14:36

So it was a common scene.

    14:36-14:38

    Look again at verse 48.

    14:38-14:40

Again, this is what fishermen did.

    14:43-14:47

You can imagine using a net that size and grabbing everything.

    14:48-14:50

You're gonna need to do a little sorting when you get to shore.

    14:50-14:52

That was what the fishermen did.

    14:52-14:55

Jesus was using that to teach the application here.

    14:57-15:07

What the fishermen would do actually is they'd have vessels filled with water to keep the fish alive until they would take it back and do the processing, take it to market, whatever.

    15:09-15:10

What would they do with the bad fish?

    15:10-15:11

    Well, they just tossed them.

    15:12-15:14

    That's bad, that's bad.

    15:14-15:15

We're getting rid of this one.

    15:15-15:15

    We're gonna keep this one.

    15:16-15:16

    This is a good one.

    15:16-15:17

    We're gonna keep this one.

    15:21-15:26

And then verse 49, Jesus says, "That's how it's going to be at the close of the age." You get that picture?

    15:29-15:34

Jesus said, "This is how everything is going to end up." At the close of the age.

    15:35-15:37

Here's the point. Good and evil do coexist.

    15:41-15:45

But that net represents time ticking down.

    15:46-15:47

    Do you see that?

    15:49-15:55

That net is time ticking down, bringing people to the shore of eternity.

    15:58-16:01

Now imagine for a second that you're one of these fish in the net.

    16:03-16:06

I don't know how fish think, but just play along with me here.

    16:06-16:09

But imagine being one of the fish in the net.

    16:09-16:24

and that wall of net is coming, and it hits the fish on the fin, I imagine that fish doesn't think, oh, danger, my life's about over.

    16:24-16:27

I'm sure it just hits that fish and he just swims on up ahead.

    16:27-16:28

    Oh, everything's okay, see?

    16:29-16:32

No net here, and then here comes the net, oh, no.

    16:34-16:36

You know, people are like that.

    16:38-16:39

    People are like that.

    16:41-17:07

People go about swimming in the sea of their lives when the gospel is proclaimed, when Jesus Christ is mentioned, when the danger of hell is mentioned, and sort of the equivalent of getting hit on the rump with a net to think, "Whoa, whoa, whoa." take a couple of steps forward and out of sight, out of mind, right?

    17:09-17:10

That's how it's going to be.

    17:10-17:10

    But here's the thing.

    17:11-17:12

    Eventually, it's going to shore.

    17:17-17:18

    See, men are moving around.

    17:18-17:19

I have all the time in the world.

    17:19-17:21

Nobody tells me what to do.

    17:21-17:25

The whole time, God's judgment gets closer and closer and closer.

    17:28-17:30

But eventually the net catches up.

    17:31-17:34

And the question is, how close is the boat to shore now today?

    17:36-17:38

    I don't know. I don't know.

    17:39-17:45

But I'll tell you this, I do know for a fact is that boat is closer to shore today than it's ever been.

    17:46-17:47

    Right.

    17:50-17:52

We're heading for the shores of eternity.

    17:55-17:57

And there's going to be a separation.

    18:01-18:03

So let's talk about the truth about hell.

    18:04-18:12

I'm going to ask you to take some notes, I have a lot of scriptures on your outline, and I understand this is going to be like an eight hour sermon if we went through and studied all these scriptures.

    18:13-18:16

But the reason I put them on here, I am going to allude to some of them, talk about some of them.

    18:16-18:25

But the reason I have them on here is I want you to take this home, look them up, get in your Bible and see what does the word of God actually say about this?

    18:25-18:26

I'm not making this stuff up.

    18:27-18:29

    But be a Bible student.

    18:29-18:32

OK, the Bible is not a magazine that we just flip through.

    18:34-18:36

Be a student of God's word.

    18:39-18:49

And really, today, I'm just going to give you one statement about hell, but on your outline. We're going to look at that sentence a chunk at a time, OK?

    18:51-18:52

So here's the first thing, the truth about hell.

    18:53-18:54

First of all, hell is a place.

    18:57-18:58

    Hell is a place.

    19:02-19:05

Jesus talked about it as a place, Matthew, chapter five.

    19:09-19:17

Matthew, chapter eight, verse 12, Jesus talked about in that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    19:17-19:24

We saw it here, Matthew, chapter 13 and verse 50 in that place, circle that word place in your Bible.

    19:24-19:29

Hell is a place. Hell is a place. Hell is not an idea.

    19:30-19:32

OK, hell is not a concept.

    19:35-19:37

Hell is not a scare tactic.

    19:40-19:52

When I was little, we went to grandma's house, grandma wouldn't want us going upstairs, obviously, you know, little kids getting in the getting in the medicine cabinet or, you know, going through the closets or whatever.

    19:53-19:54

So grandma would tell us we were little.

    19:54-19:56

She said, don't go upstairs because the boogeyman's up there.

    19:57-20:05

And I remember as a kid sitting at the bottom of grandma's steps, looking up to see if I could catch a glimpse of the boogeyman walking around.

    20:05-20:06

    That's absolutely true.

    20:06-20:07

    I used to sit there.

    20:07-20:08

Do I see him? Do I see him?

    20:09-20:10

    And here's my point.

    20:10-20:11

    Hell is not the boogeyman.

    20:12-20:15

We're not trying to scare anybody straight here.

    20:16-20:23

I'm not trying to threaten somebody to jump on Jesus team in order to avoid hell.

    20:23-20:27

Hell is a real place. It's not a scare tactic, okay?

    20:29-20:30

    But here's something else.

    20:31-20:34

Not wanting to believe it doesn't make it a fairy tale.

    20:36-20:38

You know, that's how the Jehovah's Witnesses started, by the way.

    20:39-20:42

Here's a guy, Charles Taze Russell, didn't want to believe in hell.

    20:43-20:44

    That was his starting point.

    20:44-20:50

I don't want to believe in the doctrine of hell, so I'm going to create a religion where hell doesn't exist.

    20:55-20:56

    I wish it didn't.

    21:00-21:05

If I could wish away any doctrine of scripture, I'd wish away hell, I wouldn't even have to think about it.

    21:08-21:09

    But that emotion, that sentiment.

    21:11-21:12

    Doesn't make it less true.

    21:15-21:16

    Hell is a place.

    21:17-21:18

    It's a place.

    21:19-21:22

Secondly, hell is a place of torment.

    21:23-21:24

    Jot that down.

    21:24-21:27

Hell is a place of torment.

    21:33-21:35

Scripture describes hell as being the outer darkness.

    21:37-21:42

That's what I remind the guys that say, "Well, my friends are going to be there." like we're not going to see them because it's outer darkness.

    21:42-21:45

OK, yeah, your friends might be there, but you're not going to see them.

    21:47-21:52

Described as outer darkness, it's described as a place of fire over and over and over.

    21:53-21:55

That picture is used in scripture of fire.

    21:58-22:02

It's described as a place of weeping and gnashing of teeth.

    22:02-22:03

    What is gnashing of teeth?

    22:05-22:07

It's it's gritting your teeth together.

    22:08-22:11

It's an outcry of pain and emotion at the same time.

    22:12-22:19

It's just gritting your teeth like that with such anguish and I'm in such pain and I'm angry about it.

    22:24-22:25

    When an unbeliever dies.

    22:27-22:30

    His soul. Goes to hell.

    22:32-22:36

Understand that you go somewhere upon death, you go somewhere.

    22:37-22:40

There's no soul sleep. There's no suspended animation.

    22:40-22:46

There's no I'm kind of in this spiritual coma until Jesus comes back to take care of business.

    22:47-22:49

You go someplace when you die.

    22:49-22:50

    How do I know that?

    22:50-22:53

Well, Luke, chapter 16, I encourage you to read that.

    22:53-22:54

    That's a whole nother sermon.

    22:54-22:57

But Jesus gives the account of the rich man and Lazarus.

    22:58-23:04

And Jesus just said straight up death for both of these men immediately meant going somewhere.

    23:06-23:10

The rich man went to a place of torment.

    23:12-23:17

So agonizing, oh, would you dip your finger in water and touch my tongue with it?

    23:18-23:20

    That's what agony I'm in.

    23:22-23:26

And Lazarus is said to be in Abraham's bosom.

    23:27-23:40

And I believe that that's a picture, you know, in Old Testament times, the tables weren't up sitting on chairs, they'd actually be sitting on the floor and reclining like Jesus and the disciples at the Last Supper.

    23:40-23:45

So when you were reclining at the table, you'd naturally be leaning on someone.

    23:47-23:52

And Lazarus was leaning on Abraham as a picture of heaven.

    23:55-24:00

Now, that place of torment is not the Lake of Fire yet.

    24:01-24:06

You know, the Bible tells us that when Jesus returns, he's coming back.

    24:07-24:19

But when he returns, after the seven year tribulation, he's going to set up a thousand year kingdom on the earth.

    24:21-24:28

And before that thousand year kingdom, believers in Christ are going to receive a glorified, resurrected body.

    24:30-24:33

You're going to have a body that's going to last for eternity, believers.

    24:34-24:35

It's going to last for eternity.

    24:35-24:37

It's you're not going to have back problems.

    24:39-24:42

You're not going to have to wrestle with headaches or.

    24:44-24:50

Injuries or disease or cancer, you're going to have an eternal body, but after the thousand years.

    24:53-26:11

At the great white throne judgment, the Bible tells that there's going to be another resurrection, everyone who has rejected Jesus Christ, they too are going to receive a glorified body. But it's not to enjoy forever. It's to be cast into the lake of fire for eternity. The unbelievers are outfitted with a body that's going to be thrown into the lake of fire. John 5 29, Jesus talks about the two resurrections. "Those who have done good, Jesus said, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. Revelation chapter 20 verse 15, "If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." So hell is a place of torment. As much as people want to redefine that, I don't have the ability to do the interpretive acrobatics to make the Bible say anything else about hell other than it's a place of the worst torment imaginable.

    26:15-26:30

And I get reading books and reading magazine articles I read a few years ago There's a whole branch of "evangelical Christianity" that are doing away with the doctrine of hell.

    26:31-26:32

They're just doing away with it.

    26:36-26:37

I'll be honest with you, I don't get it.

    26:39-26:40

Look up these scriptures, do your own conclusion.

    26:41-26:54

I can't see how you can look at everything the Bible says about hell being a place of torment, over and over and over and walk away from that saying, "Oh, I think hell is like..." It doesn't matter what you think.

    26:54-26:55

    It matters what God thinks.

    26:57-26:58

And this is what he said.

    27:00-27:02

So hell is a place, hell is a place of torment.

    27:03-27:06

Next, hell is a place of torment of varying degrees.

    27:08-27:11

You might not know this, but I have some scriptures, you can look these up.

    27:13-27:16

But the truth is, hell is going to be worse for some people than for others.

    27:16-27:18

Don't ask me to explain that, I don't know.

    27:18-27:21

It would seem to me that any level of hell is bad, right?

    27:22-27:26

But the Bible is clear that hell is going to be worse for some people than it is for others.

    27:27-27:59

Hebrews 10, 29 says, "How much worse punishment "do you think will be deserved by the one "who has spurned the Son of God "and has profaned the blood of the covenant "by which he was sanctified "and has outraged the Spirit of grace?" Jesus in Matthew chapter 11, he said, "I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you." Jesus was saying, you know, Sodom and Gomorrah, God incarnate wasn't in their face preaching, but you, He is.

    28:00-28:03

So things are going to be easier on Sodom in that day than they're going to be for you.

    28:04-28:16

Again, Luke chapter 12, read that, "The servant who knew his master's will but did not get ready or act according to his will, He will receive a severe beating, but the one who did not know and did but deserve the beating, he will receive a light beating.

    28:17-28:17

    Look those up.

    28:18-28:22

But the point is this, you are accountable for what you know.

    28:25-28:26

You are accountable for what you know.

    28:28-28:30

    And the more you know.

    28:31-28:33

    And the more you reject.

    28:35-28:37

The worse hell is going to be.

    28:39-28:45

That's why with tears we passionately say, look, if you haven't received Jesus Christ, what are we constantly saying up here?

    28:45-28:49

When's the day of salvation? What are we today? Today's the day of salvation.

    28:49-28:54

Come and talk to me afterwards. My email, phone number, get on our website.

    28:54-29:00

You should be tracking one of us down here at all costs saying, look, I don't know what's in store for me for eternity.

    29:00-29:02

Can we sit down and get in the Bible together?

    29:06-29:16

Because here's the danger, if you sit in church and you hear the gospel and you reject Christ and you hear the gospel and you reject Christ and you hear the gospel, there are people that have been doing that for decades.

    29:19-29:20

    Hell's going to be worse.

    29:22-29:23

    Hell's going to be worse.

    29:25-29:29

You are accountable for what you know, it's so interesting.

    29:29-29:36

There have been times I've shared the gospel with a group of guys where this question comes up a lot.

    29:36-29:39

"Well, what about that guy in Africa that's never... Did you ever hear that one?

    29:39-29:46

There's some guy sitting in some tribe in Africa." Here's the answer to that. Romans chapter 1 says that no one will have an excuse.

    29:48-29:49

No one will have an excuse.

    29:50-30:03

There's not going to be anybody that stands before God and says, "God, I just had no idea that you were out there." And God's like, "Oh, you know what? You're right. You didn't." It doesn't say that. It says they are without excuse.

    30:04-30:06

And you're like, well, how does that work? You know what? That's not on me.

    30:07-30:09

That's on the integrity of God's word.

    30:09-30:12

I trust them. If God says no one has an excuse, do you know what I say?

    30:14-30:15

    No one has an excuse.

    30:17-30:24

That's on God, that's why missionaries get sent out, that's why Harvest Bible Chapel, that's why we're planning churches all over the world.

    30:25-30:31

Why? To get the gospel out, to tell people the good news of Jesus Christ.

    30:33-30:35

But hell's a place of torment of varying degrees.

    30:36-30:45

Next on your outline. Hell is a place of torment, of varying degrees that last forever.

    30:49-30:55

And again, I know we've given the objections much more time than they deserve, but we just hear them so often.

    30:55-31:03

I really feel that I have to address them, but there are some people that say, "Well, yeah, I believe hell is real, but I also believe hell is temporary.

    31:04-31:17

You go there for a while and then like you just cease to exist." Or some people say, "You go there for a while and then you go to heaven." And there's one statement of Jesus Christ that clears that up.

    31:18-31:21

And it's, I have it on your outline, Matthew, chapter 25 and verse 46.

    31:22-31:24

Jesus talked about the sheep and the goats.

    31:24-31:29

Again, it's another story of separation, just like this one we're looking at today.

    31:29-31:35

Jesus said these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.

    31:37-31:38

    Now, here's the thing.

    31:43-31:44

    In the Greek.

    31:45-31:47

In which the Bible was written, the New Testament was written.

    31:50-31:58

The word eternal, where it says eternal punishment, that word eternal is the same Greek word where it says eternal life.

    31:59-32:03

Now, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, but here's what Jesus was saying.

    32:04-32:07

Hell lasts as long as heaven, right?

    32:07-32:09

It's the same word. It's the exact same word.

    32:10-32:13

So for the people that say, well, hell's just temporary, hell's just temporary.

    32:13-32:15

Jesus said it lasts as long as heaven.

    32:15-32:20

And here's the thing. I've been in ministry for about 15 years now.

    32:20-32:24

I have not ever one time met anybody that said heaven is temporary.

    32:24-32:25

    I've never met that guy.

    32:26-32:31

Like, yeah, I believe we go to heaven, but I believe we're only there for a while, and then on to something. I've never met that guy.

    32:32-32:36

It's almost universally accepted that heaven is eternal, and it is.

    32:37-32:41

And Jesus said hell is just as eternal as heaven is.

    32:43-32:44

    Same Greek word.

    32:45-32:46

    Hell is endless.

    32:48-32:52

The worm does not die. The fire does not go out.

    32:52-32:56

Relief is never attained. The end never comes.

    32:58-33:13

How many times have we been sick or we've been injured that we think, "Well, once I, you know, get on this medicine, and once I get to the doctor and I'll get feeling better." That doesn't happen in hell. There's no relief.

    33:16-33:29

There's no tomorrow, "This is going to be better." There's no, "Just stick it out a little bit more." Jesus said it lasts as long as heaven.

    33:31-33:31

    It's eternal.

    33:36-33:48

Hell is a place, next one, "Hell is a place of torment of varying degrees, that lasts forever, which we all deserve.

    33:50-33:52

    Here's something else about hell.

    33:53-33:59

By nature, I deserve to go to hell.

    34:03-34:15

If God was just concerned about justice, and just concerned about judgment, the first time I sinned, He would send me to hell.

    34:17-34:19

You have spit in the face of your Creator.

    34:20-34:23

You have rejected the Sovereign Holy of the Universe.

    34:24-34:26

    Not just me, though. You.

    34:28-34:33

You deserve, by nature, you deserve to go to hell just as much as I do.

    34:36-34:41

Every one of us are born with a sin nature, a self-centered, self-exalting nature.

    34:42-34:45

The Bible says actually we're dead in our sins.

    34:47-34:49

We're not just bad people, we're dead people.

    34:50-34:53

We're alienated from the life of God by nature.

    34:55-34:56

That's the condition that we're in.

    34:57-35:01

Separated now deserve to be separated for eternity.

    35:06-35:52

That's justice. The people that struggle with the whole doctrine of hell, think about this. If there was rampant, unchecked sin happening in your neighborhood, how fired up would you be if the police did nothing about it? How fired up would you be if every day, rampant, unchecked rebellion, sin, destruction, it was happening right outside your front door and nobody did a thing about it? Would that upset you? That would upset me. Somehow there's something thing in us that we expect justice to be meted out on that level.

    35:55-36:00

Doesn't it seem logical that the God of the universe would mete out justice and judgment on a global scale?

    36:03-36:05

Somehow we rail against that, like that's so offensive.

    36:08-36:09

    We all deserve it.

    36:10-36:11

    We all deserve it.

    36:11-36:26

Romans 3.23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." How many? All. Can you put that into a percentage for me?

    36:27-36:28

    100%, right?

    36:30-36:32

We've all sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

    36:33-36:40

Romans 6.23 says the wages of sin is death.

    36:41-36:44

We've all sinned, we've all earned death.

    36:45-36:49

We've all earned separation, now and for eternity.

    36:49-36:50

    We all deserve it.

    36:56-37:00

But I'll tell you what, I didn't get into ministry to tell you that.

    37:04-37:06

I was called into ministry to tell you this next thing.

    37:09-37:16

Hell is a place of torment, of varying degrees, that lasts forever, which we all deserve.

    37:20-37:23

But did you know God does not want us to go there?

    37:26-37:30

does not want anybody to go there.

    37:33-37:39

Actually, hell was never meant for people initially, the Lake of Fire.

    37:41-37:44

The Bible says it was prepared for the devil and his angels.

    37:47-37:50

But those who have rejected Christ are going there.

    37:52-37:53

But I want you to understand this.

    37:56-38:00

God does not want anybody there.

    38:02-38:07

Somehow people have this view of God as he's this as if he's this indifferent.

    38:09-38:12

Sitting up in heaven saying, you know what, turn or burn, I don't care.

    38:12-38:13

You want to come to heaven? Great.

    38:13-38:15

    If not, whatever.

    38:16-38:17

    That is not God.

    38:22-38:30

The heart of God the Father is saying, yes, there is a price of judgment to be paid for sin.

    38:30-38:34

But, but I don't want anybody going there.

    38:36-38:38

God takes no pleasure in seeing the wicked die.

    38:38-38:40

Sometimes God help us, sometimes we do.

    38:41-38:45

Sometimes we say things like, you know, I hope Bin Laden is burning in hell.

    38:45-38:46

Did you really ever think that through?

    38:48-38:50

I hope Saddam Hussein is burning in hell.

    38:50-38:53

    Really? That's not God's heart.

    38:58-39:04

Second, Peter three, nine says the Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise, as some counsel on us, but is patient towards you.

    39:04-39:10

Listen to this. Not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.

    39:13-39:15

Father in heaven, who do you want to be saved?

    39:15-39:16

    What's his answer?

    39:18-39:21

Everybody, Father in heaven, who do you want to go to hell?

    39:21-39:24

What's his answer? I don't want any of them to.

    39:25-39:28

It is my will, God is saying, it is my will that none of them go.

    39:29-39:30

I want every one of them to come to repentance.

    39:33-39:40

First, Timothy two, verses three through four says, this is good and it is pleasing in the sight of God, our Savior.

    39:41-39:45

Who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth?

    39:47-39:54

God's desire is that everyone comes to the knowledge of the truth of his son, Jesus Christ.

    39:55-39:56

    That's the heart of God.

    39:58-39:59

    Is that going to happen?

    40:02-40:04

No. Because he's given us a choice.

    40:06-40:07

    He's given us free will.

    40:08-40:10

You can walk out of here today.

    40:13-40:14

    Receiving Christ.

    40:15-40:17

    Or rejecting Christ.

    40:21-40:32

But I want you to know it's the heart of God that every single person receive Jesus Christ and receive the eternal life that only He can give.

    40:34-40:50

The biggest objection to hell, the biggest objection to hell, you've heard it, How could a loving God, how could a loving God send anyone to hell?

    40:52-40:57

You're going to hear that, and here's what you're going to tell people when they say that to you.

    40:59-41:02

God's love is not on trial here, okay?

    41:03-41:05

God's love is not in question.

    41:07-41:14

Because the Bible says that while we were yet sinners, Romans 5, God demonstrated His love.

    41:15-41:16

    How did He do it?

    41:18-41:20

By taking on flesh and blood.

    41:22-41:24

    By becoming a human being.

    41:27-41:34

to be publicly humiliated and beaten within a centimeter of his life and nailed to a cross.

    41:35-41:39

And don't think for a second Jesus Christ could have just said, you know what?

    41:39-41:40

    They're not worth it.

    41:41-41:41

    I'm out of here.

    41:44-41:45

    He willingly.

    41:47-41:49

    Willingly endured all of that.

    41:51-41:56

As a demonstration of God's love, so don't you dare say, how could a loving God do this?

    41:56-41:58

His love is not in question.

    41:59-42:03

His love was demonstrated as he was hanging on the cross.

    42:07-42:09

God doesn't want anyone going to hell.

    42:11-42:20

And there is not a greater way that he could have demonstrated that there's not a greater act of love that he could have poured out than the one that he did.

    42:21-43:00

Can you think of anything more radical that the God of the universe could have done than what he did. Can you think of anything? I can't. To come to his own creation, to be rejected and killed by his own creation. But not killed. Laying down his life. As the Lamb of God, as the perfect sacrifice. So that our sins could be forgiven. So as As we close, Sam and Laura, if you want to make your way up, this is what Jesus is teaching with this parable.

    43:02-43:05

And this is what I want you to leave with today.

    43:07-43:12

Things are not going to remain as they are forever.

    43:15-43:15

    They're not.

    43:16-43:23

The parable of the dragnet teaches that time is closing in that we are heading somewhere.

    43:27-43:30

As time runs out, we are heading towards something.

    43:34-43:44

And right now, understand this, right now, you are preparing yourself for eternity.

    43:44-43:44

    Do you know that?

    43:47-43:50

You are preparing yourself for eternity right now.

    43:50-43:52

What do I mean by that?

    43:55-44:09

If you're a person who loves God, loves God's people, loves God's Word, loves worshipping God, you know what Heaven is?

    44:12-44:20

God's presence, God's people, God's truth, worship of God for eternity.

    44:21-44:25

That's why the born again believer, that's why we're looking forward to heaven.

    44:26-44:30

Because heaven is the endless cycle of everything we love the most.

    44:31-44:33

    Because it's all God, right?

    44:36-44:38

But if you're a person that says, "You know what?

    44:41-44:42

I don't really care for worship.

    44:44-44:45

I'm not really into God's truth.

    44:46-44:52

And quite frankly, I don't really care for God's people." Well, I've got news for you.

    44:54-44:55

You're going to be miserable in heaven.

    44:57-45:02

So God in His grace will give you what you want.

    45:04-45:24

God in His grace will say, "You don't want my presence, you don't want my love, you don't want my truth, you don't want to be around my people, you don't want to worship." There's a place for that, where you don't have to deal with that.

    45:26-45:27

And that's the reality of hell.

    45:31-45:38

Because of Jesus Christ, it's obvious what choice God wants you to make.

    45:41-45:45

Whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.

    45:48-45:51

The question is, what choice have you made?

    45:56-46:03

If you're not sure, a long time friend of mine always had this little saying, "Hell's too long to be wrong."
