Power & Witness

The Power to Witness to Haters

Haters are going to Hate...

...and they’ll Call You Out. (Acts 4:1-7)

How to Witness to Haters:

  1. Put them on Defense! (Acts 4:8-10)

  2. Use God’s Word! (Acts 4:11)

  3. Don’t Compromise the Message! (Acts 4:12)

John 14:6 - ...no one comes the Father except through me.

1 Timothy 2:5 - For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

John 3:36 – Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides upon him.

Open up your Bibles to the book of Acts and chapter 4.

    00:05-00:12

Acts chapter 4, we've been walking through the book of Acts this year, and really the book of Acts is about one thing.

    00:12-00:16

It's a long book in your Bible, but it's really just about one thing.

    00:17-00:20

It's about what Jesus said in Acts chapter 1, verse 8.

    00:20-00:31

Jesus told his disciples, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, "and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

    00:31-00:33

That's what the book of Acts is about.

    00:33-00:35

Jesus said power is coming so that you may be My witnesses.

    00:37-00:39

    And immediately, the power came.

    00:39-00:40

    God's Holy Spirit came.

    00:41-00:49

And the rest of the book of Acts is about God's people and the power of the Holy Spirit being witnesses for Jesus Christ.

    00:49-00:51

    And that carries on today.

    00:52-00:57

So if you are - listen to this - because if you don't get this, the rest of the sermon's not going to mean much to you.

    00:58-01:10

But if you are a true follower of Jesus Christ - a true follower, not "I'm a churchgoer." Well, I'm not Buddhist or whatever, so I guess I'm a Christian.

    01:10-01:26

If you are a true follower, a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, the question is not "am I a witness?" The question is "what kind of witness am I?" Okay?

    01:26-01:35

So, if you're sitting here today, you're like, "Well, I'm a Christian, but I'm not really a witness for Christ." That's impossible, according to the Bible.

    01:36-01:43

That'd be like you sitting here saying, "Well, yeah, I'm a human being, but I'm not really a mammal." You are!

    01:44-01:46

It's the very nature of what you are.

    01:46-01:53

Jesus said the Holy Spirit has come so that we may be witnesses for Him.

    01:53-01:56

So if you're a born-again believer, You are a witness.

    01:57-01:59

What kind of witness are you?

    02:00-02:05

Remember in Acts 3, we saw that Peter and John healed this lame beggar at the temple.

    02:05-02:11

And in v. 10, everyone recognized this healed man and was amazed.

    02:13-02:16

And last week, we saw that Peter showed us how to witness.

    02:17-02:19

We saw how Peter made it really clear.

    02:21-02:22

    The Gospel's about God.

    02:24-02:27

He talked about our guilt and God's grace.

    02:27-02:30

And he showed us that a response is required.

    02:32-02:33

Well, church, you're going to get a response.

    02:35-02:40

And sometimes, much like Peter and John, the response that you get is going to be persecution.

    02:42-02:44

I believe this is on your outline.

    02:46-02:50

"Haters are going to hate." Is that on your outline?

    02:51-02:54

That is actually the proper syntax for it.

    02:54-03:09

You may more commonly know this phrase as "haters gonna hate." And in my undying efforts to stay relevant and fresh to the young people of the church, I take time to learn the vernacular.

    03:11-03:15

"Haters gonna hate." How many people are familiar with the phrase "haters gonna hate"?

    03:15-03:16

How many people have heard that?

    03:17-03:20

How many people have never heard that phrase before just now?

    03:20-03:22

    Wow! Wow!

    03:22-03:24

You've never heard "hater's gonna hate"?

    03:25-03:25

    Wow!

    03:26-03:27

Alright, hands up again to people that have.

    03:29-03:29

    Okay.

    03:31-03:31

    Wow.

    03:32-03:35

Well, I don't know where I first heard the term.

    03:36-03:38

But it's just sort of become part of pop culture.

    03:39-03:53

You know, when somebody shows disdain for something that you may be interested in, the phrase is, "Well, you know, he's a hater, and haters are going to hate, or haters gonna hate.

    03:53-04:05

And again, in my devotion to you to stay fresh and relevant with the slang of the youth, I, alright, I googled this to see where it came from.

    04:07-04:10

Do you know where this phrase was popularized?

    04:11-04:12

If you know, shout it out.

    04:13-04:15

    Taylor Swift, right?

    04:15-04:17

Taylor Swift, and what's the name of the song?

    04:17-04:18

Who knows the name of the song?

    04:19-04:20

What's the name of the song, Livvy?

    04:21-04:22

    "Shake It Off," that's right.

    04:23-04:24

At least that's what Google said.

    04:25-04:28

So Livvy and Google are on the same page there.

    04:28-04:43

"Shake It Off." Well, maybe, Livvy, you didn't know this, but do you know Taylor Swift was sued in October by Jessie Graham, an R&B singer who claims that she stole that phrase from him?

    04:44-04:51

Well, I don't know who said it first, But, it's true that haters are going to hate.

    04:53-05:01

And you know, I wish everyone that we shared the gospel with was eager to hear it, or at least curious to hear it.

    05:02-05:16

And I know when I was first called into the ministry, I thought, well, this is great, because Jesus is awesome, and Jesus loves people, and I love people, and people are going to love me telling them about Jesus.

    05:18-05:21

And I found that that is not always the case.

    05:22-05:37

I found that there are people - not only do they not want to hear it, but they're going to hate you because you want to share it.

    05:39-05:42

You see, when we talk about witnessing, there's really two kinds of witnessing.

    05:43-05:46

You witness to people that are interested, like we've seen so far in Acts, right?

    05:47-05:48

Pentecost, Acts 3, you know the crowd.

    05:50-05:58

And there's people who are going to challenge you because they hate the gospel, they hate the church, they hate Jesus, and they hate Jesus' followers.

    05:59-06:00

And there is nothing new under the sun.

    06:01-06:06

In fact, Acts chapter 4 records the first opposition to the church.

    06:08-06:16

And as we go through Acts chapters 4 through 28, There's something like only three chapters in the rest of the book of Acts where there's not persecution mentioned.

    06:17-06:20

    So, buckle up.

    06:22-06:23

    Haters are going to hate.

    06:25-06:29

Secondly, haters are going to hate and they'll call you out.

    06:30-06:32

Church, you need to be ready for this. Some of you have been there.

    06:33-06:35

If you haven't, you will be.

    06:37-06:38

They're going to call you out.

    06:39-06:48

You don't have to go look for people who hate the gospel, because we're going to see from the text, they're going to find you.

    06:49-06:52

Okay, so let's kind of set the stage here with the text.

    06:52-06:53

Look at Acts chapter 4, look at verse 1.

    06:53-06:57

It says, "And as they were speaking to the people," that's Peter and John, right?

    06:57-07:09

"And as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them." The captain of the temple.

    07:09-07:12

You know, the temple, they had like their own police force.

    07:12-07:14

    Their own security guard.

    07:14-07:17

And this was the captain of that guard.

    07:18-07:20

    And the Sadducees.

    07:21-07:22

    Who were the Sadducees?

    07:22-07:27

Well, the Sadducees were the dominant religious and political force in Israel.

    07:28-07:33

You know, they were Jewish religious leaders who were also wealthy landowners.

    07:33-07:34

    And this was their deal.

    07:35-07:38

They wanted to keep peace with Rome no matter what.

    07:41-07:47

Because if Rome sensed any kind of a threat with the Jews, they could have come and taken these people's wealth and taken their land.

    07:48-07:51

So the Sadducees were like, "Everything's okay here.

    07:51-08:01

We kind of got our thing under Roman occupation, but let's not cause any problems." So they made peace with Rome under their occupation.

    08:03-08:04

    To protect themselves.

    08:04-08:10

The Sadducees didn't believe in angels, they didn't believe in resurrection, they didn't believe that there was any kind of a spirit world.

    08:10-08:17

In fact, they claimed that they really only believed the first five books of the Bible, the Pentateuch, the books of Moses.

    08:18-08:22

But when we walked through the Gospel of Mark, we saw that they didn't even really believe that.

    08:23-08:27

In other words, these guys were the religious liberals of the day.

    08:29-08:31

But they were also in the position of power.

    08:31-09:08

Okay, so verse 2 says, "Greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead." Annoyed - this word also can be translated "pained." The Sadducees were like, "These guys are a pain in my neck because you're teaching something that we don't believe." These Sadducees were so fired up that these uneducated people were preaching what the religious leaders would have thought was a false doctrine, which is resurrection.

    09:11-09:12

    Here's another problem.

    09:13-09:21

This teaching centered around a person - Jesus Christ - who they just executed two months ago at this point.

    09:22-09:24

So you can imagine how fired up they were.

    09:24-09:27

We thought we were done with the Jesus of Nazareth business.

    09:28-09:35

finally put to rest, and yeah, there's some people saying He rose from the dead, but His ministry's done.

    09:35-09:41

Now all of a sudden, crowds are gathering, and who's the name centered around the controversy?

    09:41-09:42

    Jesus again?

    09:44-09:45

    Come on!

    09:47-09:56

Side note, one of the biggest reasons given for the hate on Christians - people say this - Christians are intolerant.

    09:57-09:58

    Christians are intolerant.

    09:58-10:02

And I look at this passage and I say, well, who's being intolerant?

    10:03-10:09

You notice, it's true in the text, but it's also true in the news, and it's going to be true in your neighborhood if it's not already.

    10:11-10:15

There is no such thing as live and let live when it comes to Christians, right?

    10:16-10:18

I have friends that believe differently than I do.

    10:19-10:20

    And that's okay.

    10:20-10:22

I witness to them when I can.

    10:22-10:30

I'm not forcing my beliefs on anyone any more than these apostles were.

    10:30-10:34

They had a crowd gathered because there was a miracle and they were telling them about Jesus.

    10:34-10:37

They weren't forcing anybody to do anything.

    10:38-10:40

But you see, when it comes to Christians, there is no live and let live.

    10:40-10:42

Like, I don't really believe that, but whatever.

    10:42-10:47

When it comes to Christians, you guys need to shut your mouths with the Jesus talk.

    10:48-10:49

Stop with the Bible stuff, ok?

    10:49-10:50

We don't want to hear it.

    10:51-10:52

    I'm tolerant.

    10:54-10:55

And the page - it's in the news.

    10:55-10:58

It's happening in your neighborhood if it's not already.

    10:59-11:00

    It's coming.

    11:01-11:01

    Look at verse 3.

    11:03-11:12

It says, "And they arrested them and put them into custody until the next day, for it was already evening." Technically, they weren't allowed to have trials at night.

    11:13-11:16

Like, wait a minute, didn't Jesus' trial happen at night?

    11:16-11:16

    Yeah.

    11:17-11:18

    That was wrong.

    11:18-11:19

    What they did.

    11:19-11:29

an exception for Jesus. So technically they weren't allowed to have trials at night, so since it was evening they took the two biggest leaders in the church, right?

    11:29-11:38

Peter and John, and they incarcerated them. Good news, nothing stops the gospel.

    11:38-11:48

Verse 4 says, "But many of those who heard the word believed, and the number of men came to about 5,000.

    11:50-11:57

My best understanding when you look at the original language, when it says the number came to about 5,000, that it's adding to Pentecost.

    11:58-12:02

Saying 5,000 total at this point, according to the language.

    12:02-12:03

    But you understand the point.

    12:04-12:05

The point isn't counting beans here.

    12:05-12:14

The point is, the church is exploding, and even when you arrest the pastors, the church is still exploding because God is at work.

    12:16-12:18

    More people being saved.

    12:19-12:22

About 2,000 more people from Pentecost saved.

    12:23-12:24

    Look at v. 5.

    12:24-12:38

It says, "On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes - the religious leaders also called the Sanhedrin - we'll talk about them in a second - is gathered together in Jerusalem." Time for the trial.

    12:38-12:39

    And look who's involved in v. 6.

    12:40-12:41

    This is interesting.

    12:42-13:08

"Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high priestly family." So if you're familiar with your Bibles, and you look at this list of names, you could say, "Well, from an earthly perspective, things aren't looking very good for Peter and John." Annas, at this time, was the most powerful man in Israel.

    13:09-13:12

Now, when this was being written, he wasn't technically the high priest.

    13:13-13:16

His son Caiaphas was technically the high priest.

    13:17-13:19

But it was sort of like, you know how we do with the presidents?

    13:20-13:23

You know, once you're president, you keep the president name, right?

    13:23-13:25

Like President Bush and President Clinton.

    13:25-13:29

Out of respect for them having held that office, they're still referred to as the president.

    13:30-13:31

That's how it was with the high priest.

    13:32-13:35

So he was still referred to, Annas, as the high priest.

    13:35-13:39

but another thing was this, Annas, he was controlling things behind the scenes.

    13:42-13:49

His son might have been the one holding the office, but Annas was the one working behind the scenes.

    13:49-13:53

In fact, John 18, Annas was a key figure in Jesus' trials.

    13:56-13:57

So do you have the scene?

    13:59-14:08

Here two months earlier, Annas and company thought that they had dealt with Jesus A few months later, Annison Company is still dealing with Jesus.

    14:10-14:11

    Look at v. 7.

    14:13-14:20

"When they had set them in the midst..." They would form a semicircle and put them in the midst of them.

    14:20-14:32

"When they had set them in the midst, they inquired, 'By what power or by what name did you do this?'" See the question?

    14:34-14:39

What power or what name did you do this?

    14:39-14:41

It really comes down to an authority issue.

    14:42-14:43

    It's an authority issue.

    14:44-14:47

What gives you the right to do what you did?

    14:49-14:50

    What authority do you have?

    14:51-14:56

You see, we talked about the Sadducees and the Sanhedrin and Annas and Caiaphas.

    14:57-15:00

Today, we're just going to put them all in a category, and the category is haters.

    15:01-15:03

    Haters, obviously.

    15:04-15:06

So these haters put them on the spot.

    15:06-15:08

    And this is serious business.

    15:09-15:13

This Sanhedrin was basically Israel's Supreme Court.

    15:14-15:27

And imagine, the Supreme Court of haters has these two evangelists on trial, and you think, well, maybe Peter and John are going to do a little damage control at this point.

    15:30-15:32

It's going to happen to you at some point.

    15:33-15:36

If you're a faithful witness for Jesus Christ, it's going to happen.

    15:36-15:37

Somebody's going to call you out.

    15:38-15:42

Somebody's going to say, "Were you telling people about Jesus?

    15:43-15:44

Were you telling people about the Bible?

    15:44-15:46

What gives you the right to do that?

    15:46-15:50

Who do you think you are?" It's going to happen.

    15:50-15:53

When you witness, you are going to attract haters.

    15:53-15:56

When you witness, you are going to attract haters.

    15:58-16:07

"Pastor Jeff, have you ever attracted haters?" "Everybody loves me." You know something I've learned is I am everybody's cup of tea.

    16:08-16:09

    That is so not true.

    16:10-16:13

I was just jotting down some examples.

    16:13-16:18

If you want to hear the whole story, buy me lunch, and I'll tell you all of these.

    16:19-16:21

Actually, you might have to buy me lunch and supper if you want to hear all of them.

    16:22-16:24

But if you want to hear them, buy me lunch.

    16:24-16:26

I'll be happy to go to lunch with you.

    16:27-16:28

I'll tell you the full version.

    16:30-16:32

I'm going to give you a couple examples from my own life.

    16:34-16:44

As a result to a letter to the editor that I sent to the newspaper some years back, I had a woman calling my house, demanding to meet with me.

    16:45-17:06

And I said, "Why do you want to meet with me?" She says, "Because of what you teach, you are a dangerous man." tracked me down in my office and the letter was because some goofy doctor was saying you can't be a Christian and you can't be a scientist at the same time.

    17:06-18:14

I sent a letter to the editor I'm like here's all the major branches of science that were founded by Christians and the list is like as long as your arm of sciences that were founded by Christians. I'm like so let's let's knock off the silly notion that Christians can't be scientists. In fact it looks like Christians invented science. And so this lady came after me for that. And it wasn't to share a muffin. I'll tell you the rest of the story if you buy me lunch. My wife and I were put on trial, literally trial, in the courtroom because we were accused of baptizing foster children that were under our care. We did not. We did not baptize them. We were accused. I was called to a meeting at the prison because I was accused of anti-catholic teaching in our Bible study. I was called out. "What is this that you're teaching?" I had some friends at church camp that I got involved secondhand, but I had friends at church camp that were called out because they were teaching Jesus. You remember this?

    18:15-18:58

They were like, "What are you going to do to get saved?" And these friends were like, "Well, you got to receive Jesus Christ." And, "Well, you didn't preach baptism the way that we want you to teach baptism and church people calling us out because of the message circling around Jesus. I was chewed out by a missionary one time over lunch. I was chewed out by a missionary for not agreeing with him that Islam is a wonderful religion of peace. He was just going on and on about all Islam is so wonderful and Muslims are so... Muslims are just you know wonderful peaceful and I said, "Yeah, if you're a Muslim." Doesn't work out so well if you're a Christian or a Jew though.

    18:59-19:01

You might want to check your facts on that.

    19:04-19:05

And that lunch didn't end well.

    19:07-19:08

I think he even left me with the check.

    19:10-19:11

    But it didn't go well.

    19:13-19:14

    My point is this.

    19:15-19:30

When you witness someone is going to come after you, Somebody at some point is going to say, "What gives you the right?" And the question that we're going to answer today from God's Word - not my answer - we're going to see it straight from God's Word.

    19:31-19:33

What do we do when we're challenged by haters?

    19:35-19:36

So understand the difference in witnessing.

    19:36-19:45

We're not talking about, "I'm curious to hear what you believe." We're talking about, "Who do you think you are?" So what do we do when we're challenged by haters?

    19:45-19:48

Number one, put them on defense.

    19:50-19:54

them on defense. Look at verses 8 through 10. Okay, so Peter's about to speak.

    19:56-20:02

And Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit. That's like the key to all of this, all right?

    20:04-20:11

I find it so ironic. They're like, "By what power do you do this?" Next verse. "Filled with the Holy Spirit." You want power?

    20:12-20:50

How about the power of God? Wow. Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, it said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, "if we are being examined today "concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, "by what means this man has been healed, "let it be known to all of you "and to all the people of Israel "that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, "whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, By Him, this man is standing before you well." Wow.

    20:52-20:58

Peter and John are put on trial, but did you see how quickly the Sanhedrin - the haters - were put on trial?

    20:59-21:03

Peter went right to the attack, right to the offense.

    21:04-21:08

Peter was basically saying, "Is it wrong to heal a lame person?" Is that what the trial is about?

    21:09-21:10

It's wrong to heal a lame person?

    21:10-21:11

I'm sorry, I missed that part.

    21:13-21:16

We're on trial for doing something good for a crippled man.

    21:17-21:19

If you're really interested, you need to know.

    21:20-21:21

    Jesus.

    21:22-21:23

    You killed Him.

    21:23-21:25

God raised Him from the dead.

    21:25-21:26

    And Jesus healed this man.

    21:28-21:35

Something we see Peter doing in taking the offense is something that you need to discipline yourself to do and learn how to do.

    21:35-21:36

    And it comes through witnessing.

    21:36-21:37

    I said it last week.

    21:37-21:38

    We have a prison ministry.

    21:39-21:39

You want to learn how to witness?

    21:39-21:40

    Sign up for prison ministry.

    21:42-21:49

I promise you, in a few months, you'll be the best witness you've ever been getting in there, witnessing the people.

    21:51-21:52

But you need to steer the conversation.

    21:54-22:01

So often, we think we just need to let people pepper us with the accusations and put us on the defense.

    22:02-22:03

    You steer the conversation.

    22:04-22:05

Do you know who's the master of doing this?

    22:05-22:11

Do you know who the best person of all time of steering the conversation about Jesus.

    22:12-22:17

I love the Gospels - just how Jesus did this all the time.

    22:18-22:21

Matthew 21, for example, Jesus was asked about His authority.

    22:23-22:25

By what authority are you doing these things?

    22:25-22:28

And Jesus said, alright, let me ask you a question.

    22:28-22:30

You answer my question, I'll answer your question.

    22:30-22:33

John's baptism - was it from heaven or was it from man?

    22:34-22:41

were like, Matthew 22, Jesus was challenged, is it lawful to pay taxes?

    22:42-22:45

And Jesus says, who's on the coin?

    22:46-22:50

See how he put on the defense, but went on the offense.

    22:52-23:00

Luke 10 25, Jesus was asked, you know, about the commandments and Jesus said, obviously love God, heart, soul, mind, and strength, love your neighbor as yourself.

    23:01-23:07

And then the Bible says that trying to justify himself, the one lawyer, the expert in the law said, well, who's my neighbor?

    23:09-23:10

And putting Jesus on the defense.

    23:11-23:11

    Who's my neighbor?

    23:12-23:13

Jesus said, let me tell you a story.

    23:14-23:15

And he tells him the story of the Good Samaritan.

    23:16-23:22

And Jesus closes that story by saying, now, let me ask you, which of these men was a neighbor to the man who fell among robbers?

    23:23-23:25

He turned the tables completely on them.

    23:26-23:29

And when you're witnessing the haters, church, you put them on the defense.

    23:31-23:34

And the way that you do that is by asking them questions.

    23:36-23:37

That's essentially what Peter was doing here.

    23:37-23:39

Like, "Oh, is it wrong to heal lame people?

    23:40-23:43

"Is that what's going on?" Ask questions.

    23:44-23:48

Like, "Well, Pastor Jeff, "I'm not really sure what questions to ask." I'm gonna give you three questions to ask.

    23:48-23:55

When you're being challenged, when you're being attacked, I'm gonna give you three questions that work beautifully every time.

    23:56-23:58

Jot these down, three good questions to ask.

    23:59-24:01

You ask them when you're being attacked.

    24:02-24:06

You don't ask these in a jerky way, or it doesn't work, because now you're just being a jerk.

    24:06-24:08

    You ask them respectfully.

    24:08-24:09

Peter was very respectful to them.

    24:09-24:13

    I know I got a little smart-alecky in recounting it, but Peter wasn't smart-alecky.

    24:13-24:14

    He was respectful.

    24:14-24:18

And when you ask the questions, be respectful.

    24:19-24:20

    And ask these three questions.

    24:20-24:22

The first question is, what do you believe?

    24:23-24:26

You know, you're asking me about my beliefs.

    24:26-24:28

Here's the first question. What do you believe?

    24:30-24:39

"What do I believe about what?" "What do you believe about what happens when you die?" I'm curious what you think. What happens when we die?

    24:41-24:49

And let them talk. What do you believe about Jesus? Do you think He was God in the flesh or do you think He was just some guy? What do you believe?

    24:49-24:53

Get people to share what they believe. Just ask them.

    24:53-24:54

    Don't try to correct them.

    24:56-24:57

    Don't interrupt them.

    24:57-25:10

Just ask them, "Let me hear what you believe." And then after they share with you what they believe, the second question is, "Well, why do you believe that?" "Why do you believe that?

    25:10-25:11

Is that something you were always taught?

    25:11-25:13

Is that something your grandma told you?

    25:13-25:15

Were you raised in a church that taught that?

    25:15-26:45

Is that your opinion?" Just ask people, "Where did you come up with that?" do you believe? And again, respectfully, and why do you believe that? Okay, and here's the third question. This is really important. You need to write this down and memorize it. If what you believe were wrong, would you want to know? Now listen, I promise you, if you ask somebody that question, what they're going to say is what I believe is not wrong. This is a yes or no question. They only have two choices yes or no if what you believe were wrong would you want to know yes or no I have been challenged by so many people when I ask these questions they end up looking very foolish and I'm not trying to make them look foolish it's not my goal I don't want to make anybody look or feel stupid they bring it on themselves like I had an atheist friend one time challenging me on some stuff. I'm like, "Well, his name was Tom." I said, "Tom, what do you think happens when you die?" He goes, "Well, I think it's whatever you want to believe in. Like, if you believe God's a pink elephant, when you die you'll be with a pink elephant." I said, "Do you really believe that, Tom?" And when I said that to him, it was like you could have knocked him over with a feather. He was like... It didn't sound stupid until he verbalized it. So what do you believe? Why would you want to know?

    26:47-26:47

    See, here's the thing.

    26:49-26:50

What you believe were wrong, what do you want to know?

    26:50-26:55

If they say no, then there's really no point in further talking, right?

    26:55-26:56

    Okay.

    26:57-27:00

But if yes, and you say, "Well, you know what?

    27:01-27:04

I'd like to share some things with you about what the Word of God says," if you're interested.

    27:06-27:09

So, what do you do with haters?

    27:09-27:10

First of all, look at Peter.

    27:10-27:11

    Put them on the defense.

    27:12-27:13

    He went right after it.

    27:14-27:24

right after it and you go right after it, not obnoxious, not arrogant, not cocky, but the biblical word, we're going to talk about this next week, the biblical word is boldness.

    27:25-27:36

Boldness doesn't mean abrasive, boldness just means this, I'm not afraid to speak up. I'll speak up humbly, I'll speak up lovingly, but I'm not afraid to speak up and that's what That's what Peter did here.

    27:37-27:38

    Not disrespectful, but very bold.

    27:39-27:42

    Secondly, use God's Word.

    27:44-27:45

    Use God's Word.

    27:46-27:58

Peter's like, since we're on trial for doing something good for a crippled man, if you're really interested, you need to know Jesus - you killed Him, God raised Him, Jesus healed this man, I'm not finished!

    27:59-28:00

    Look at verse 11.

    28:00-28:08

He says, "This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you - the builders.

    28:10-28:13

    Which has become a cornerstone.

    28:14-28:15

    What's the cornerstone?

    28:15-28:19

Well, this is actually a quote from Psalm 118 v. 22.

    28:21-28:22

    What's the cornerstone?

    28:22-28:31

When they wanted to build a building in these days, they didn't call the concrete company and say I need you to come with your trucks and pour a slab.

    28:33-28:34

They didn't do it that way.

    28:34-28:38

They would have a bunch of stones that they would build.

    28:38-28:43

But the most important stone of all of them was the cornerstone.

    28:44-28:47

The cornerstone was the first stone that was laid.

    28:47-28:51

And it had to be the right size, and it had to be the right shape, and it had to be the right angle.

    28:52-29:02

And the cornerstone was placed so that as the rest of the stones were built around it, the building would get its alignment from the cornerstone.

    29:04-29:10

And Peter here is saying, listen, Jesus is the cornerstone.

    29:12-29:17

Meaning everything in God's Kingdom is built from Jesus Christ.

    29:18-29:23

Everything in God's Kingdom is aligned to Jesus Christ.

    29:24-29:34

He is the most important part Kingdom." In other words, Peter was quoting this verse to say you rejected Him.

    29:35-29:41

You rejected the cornerstone that God gave Him the highest exaltation possible.

    29:43-29:46

You know something that really makes this verse cool in this context?

    29:47-29:48

    Jot this down.

    29:49-29:56

Matthew 21.42 Jesus' authority was challenged.

    29:58-30:02

When Jesus' authority was challenged, does anybody want to guess what verse He used?

    30:03-30:18

Psalm 118.22 Jesus said, "The stone that you've rejected has become the cornerstone." Now fast forward here just a couple of months, and Peter on trial for Jesus.

    30:18-30:24

Do you think Peter was having a flashback moment of when Jesus was dealing with haters?

    30:25-30:30

Do you think Peter had this flashback moment Oh, I remember the verse that Jesus used.

    30:31-30:32

    Rejecting the cornerstone.

    30:32-30:34

And that's exactly what you're doing.

    30:35-30:37

    Very significant verse.

    30:38-30:44

So my point is this, church, if Jesus and Peter used the Word of God, do I think that I don't need to?

    30:45-30:57

Every word that came out of Jesus' mouth was the Word of God, but He still found it important in quoting Scripture and showing the power and the authority that the Word of God has.

    30:59-31:02

So when you're dealing with haters, use God's Word.

    31:03-31:04

Why? Well, there's really two reasons.

    31:04-31:05

One, God's Word has the power.

    31:05-31:07

We'll talk about that in a second.

    31:07-31:11

But another reason you want to use God's Word is it helps keep you objective.

    31:12-31:13

    Not jerky or abrasive.

    31:14-31:22

It helps keep you objective because when you get into these kind of arguments with haters - discussions, debates, whatever word you want to use - it's easy to attack the person.

    31:24-31:25

It's easy to attack the person.

    31:26-31:38

They say, "Well, you're an idiot for believing that the Bible's true." And you're like, "Well, you're a godless pagan moron for not believing the Bible." Great, now we're just name-calling.

    31:39-31:42

You see, taking people to the Word of God - let's get objective here.

    31:42-31:43

Let's just deal with facts, right?

    31:44-31:45

    Let's just deal with facts.

    31:45-31:47

This isn't about me or my personality.

    31:47-31:50

It's not even really about you or your personality.

    31:50-31:52

This is about the Word of God.

    31:53-32:48

political ads how many people just love political ads show it raise your hands come on get them up high if you love political ads I got one maybe don't you just love those political ads you know the ones that I love sarcasm you know the ones that I love are the ones that just come out and they're like my the person that is running against me is the most horrible evil wicked person of all time and you know he kicks puppies on his day off and he steals from the elderly but you should vote for me paid for by the committee for me whatever and Aaron and I've said this so many times over the years why don't the candidates just get on and say here's here's what I believe in here's my platform here's why you should vote for me because I'm going to XYZ but the closer you get to election you see very little of that but you see a whole lot of don't put don't "I'm going to vote for this piece of trash." True or false?

    32:49-32:51

    "I don't like them.

    32:52-32:58

They're grating on my spirit." But that's what people do.

    32:59-33:04

So when you're dealing with haters and sharing the Gospel, don't make it your opinion versus my opinion.

    33:05-33:08

You need to make it this is your opinion versus the Word of God.

    33:09-33:11

Your opinion versus the Word of God.

    33:11-33:14

Okay, this is what you're saying, I'm going to show you what the Bible says about that.

    33:16-33:18

Because honestly, at the end of the day, my opinion means very little.

    33:19-33:21

    My opinion doesn't mean anything.

    33:22-33:27

When you take me to lunch to hear my stories, I'll give you my opinion on anything you want, but I'm telling you it's not worth anything.

    33:28-33:30

It's just not. It's just my opinion.

    33:30-33:35

    But, God's Word has power.

    33:37-33:39

You know what kind of power God's Word has?

    33:39-33:47

Isaiah 55:11 God says that His Word, when it's sent forth, it always accomplishes the purpose for which He sent it.

    33:48-33:54

There is nothing else in existence that works 100% perfectly every time.

    33:54-33:56

    And God says this does.

    33:57-34:02

My Word always accomplishes the purposes for which I sent it out.

    34:03-34:04

That's why a pastor friend of mine has said this.

    34:04-34:06

I don't know if it's original with him, but I love the expression.

    34:07-34:10

He says the Word of God - the Word of God is like a lion.

    34:11-34:13

You don't need to defend a lion.

    34:14-34:17

You let the lion out of the cage, and the lion's going to defend himself.

    34:19-34:23

And when you're dealing with haters, you let the lion out.

    34:24-34:25

You don't need to defend God's Word.

    34:25-34:28

You let God's Word out, God will defend Himself.

    34:28-34:30

He doesn't need you to do that.

    34:31-34:34

What He's called you to do is to proclaim it.

    34:36-34:37

    So use God's Word.

    34:38-35:10

Real quick story, the effectiveness of this. One time in prison ministry, this was still at the old prison, it was still like a dungeon, but the one night we actually, this particular it wasn't we, it was just me, and the guys were coming in and there were about probably 20 guys this night in a like an 8x20 room. These two enormous gentlemen came in. They didn't look like they were there for a picnic, They looked like they were there for a fight.

    35:11-35:14

And I started sharing the gospel.

    35:14-35:15

And one man raised his hand.

    35:17-35:32

He said, "The Bible doesn't say that Jesus is actually God." And he didn't say it like, "Pastor Jeff, I'm kind of interested in what you think about the divinity of Christ." It was slap in the face, throw the gauntlet down kind of thing.

    35:32-36:06

He's like, "The Bible doesn't say that." So I just smiled and I said, "Well, let's see what the Bible does say." We walked through John chapter one, we walked through John chapter eight, we walked through John chapter 10, we walked through Colossians one, I think we even ended up in Revelation one, and back to Hebrews one, where God the Father calls God the Son God, and through this impromptu Bible study, I said, "So what does it look like "the Bible says to you about Jesus?" You know, they didn't say a word the rest of the night, and they never came back.

    36:07-36:10

Because you see, their issue was with God's Word, not me.

    36:10-36:13

I didn't invent this idea that Jesus is God.

    36:15-36:16

That's the truth of God's Word.

    36:17-36:18

So I'm like, look guys, here's what it says.

    36:19-36:19

    You see that?

    36:20-36:23

Your issue's with God, not with me.

    36:24-36:24

    So use God's Word.

    36:24-36:30

And then finally, finally, don't compromise the message.

    36:32-36:34

    Don't compromise the message.

    36:34-36:35

    Look at verse 12.

    36:35-36:38

This should be highlighted in every Bible here.

    36:39-36:40

    There is salvation.

    36:40-36:41

    Look at v. 12.

    36:42-37:01

"There is salvation..." "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." In our day of political correctness, everybody is offended by everything.

    37:03-37:15

I shared with you before, that really hit the beyond the you know point of no return when everybody was all offended by the Dukes of Hazzard. Wow there's just no going back now.

    37:16-37:37

With everybody being offended by everything you know at this point as we're reading the sermon we get to verse 12 and we're like you know what Peter maybe you should maybe you should pump the brakes a little here. I mean you came off a little strong with the cornerstone remark. Maybe you should pump the brakes a little here and Peter's like, "Nah, full gas," and just like right into verse 12.

    37:39-38:01

Remember the original argument, the original accusation, "By what name do you do this?" Verse 12, Peter's like, "You want a name? I'll give you a name. Jesus Christ. There is no other name that will save." Even saying that now, there might be some people in the auditorium that are like, "Oh, I don't know if I I like hearing that.

    38:01-38:03

Or I don't know if I really believe that.

    38:03-38:05

Understand, church, this is what the Bible says.

    38:07-38:09

Salvation is in no one else.

    38:10-38:12

John 14:6 - do we have these verses?

    38:13-38:22

John 14:6 Jesus said, "No one comes to the Father except through Me." Was Jesus telling the truth or was He not telling the truth?

    38:24-38:31

1 Timothy 2:5 It says, "For there is one God as one mediator between God and man - that man Jesus Christ.

    38:33-38:36

John 3:36 says, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

    38:37-38:39

Whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life.

    38:40-38:44

But the wrath of God abides upon him." The Bible is clear.

    38:45-38:46

    Peter makes it clear here.

    38:47-38:48

There's salvation in no one else.

    38:49-39:06

There is no other name under heaven even among men by which we must be saved." We're getting ready to move, and we've had to do a lot of repairs in the house - just some of them little things, but we found we had a couple of kind of major things.

    39:07-39:14

Like we had a plumbing issue where a pipe wasn't going to the right drain and it had to be rerouted.

    39:14-39:16

And I'm like, well, that's a little beyond me.

    39:16-39:18

    I needed a plumber.

    39:20-39:26

When I needed help to fix this plumbing situation, I didn't just grab the phone book and-- I'm sorry.

    39:27-39:28

In my quest to be relevant, I forgot.

    39:28-39:30

How many people here know what a phone book is?

    39:32-39:35

OK, when I was a kid, we had these white and yellow books.

    39:35-39:37

And they threw like three of them on your curb.

    39:40-39:47

And when I needed a plumber, I didn't just like open up the phone book and go to the white pages and be like, you know, Herbert Smith.

    39:48-39:48

I'm just going to call him up.

    39:49-39:50

Hey, can you come and fix my plumbing?

    39:50-39:51

    Like, who is this?

    39:52-39:54

I didn't just call on anybody to fix the plumbing.

    39:55-39:57

I needed the name of a plumber.

    39:58-40:03

And when I was given the name of a plumber, I called that guy to come and help me fix the plumbing problem.

    40:03-40:04

We had a little electrical problem.

    40:04-40:07

One of the thermostats, the current wasn't going to it.

    40:08-40:09

    I don't mess with electricity.

    40:11-40:14

But I didn't just grab the phone book and just start randomly picking people.

    40:15-40:17

Hey, can you come and risk your life to fix my thermostat?

    40:19-40:28

I had an electric problem, so I needed the name of an electrician that could come and fix the electric problem.

    40:30-40:32

Not just any name was going to do, right?

    40:34-40:34

    Here's the thing.

    40:36-40:38

You and I, we need a Savior.

    40:39-40:41

Because we have a problem with sin.

    40:42-40:45

We are guilty and it's destroying us by nature.

    40:46-40:49

    We need a Savior.

    40:51-40:56

You need someone who paid the penalty for your sins that you committed against God.

    40:57-41:05

And you need someone who can restore to you the eternal life that was forfeited when Adam and Eve brought sin into the world.

    41:05-41:09

You need a Savior, and Muhammad cannot do that.

    41:10-41:28

Joseph Smith and Charles Taze Russell and Mary Baker Eddy and the Buddha - none of those people are able to save you Because there's only ever been One who died and rose from the dead so that we could be forgiven and have eternal life.

    41:28-41:33

And that One - the only One that's ever done that - is Jesus Christ.

    41:34-41:45

So that's why Peter here in Acts 4:12, and that's why you and I, church, need to get to that mindset in our lives where we say I am not going to compromise on the message.

    41:46-41:50

Because I'm more concerned about offending God and I am about offending people.

    41:52-42:12

And you know, the same Peter that's speaking here, the same Peter later wrote a couple of letters that are actually in your Bible, and one of them, 1 Peter 3:15, Peter said we should always be prepared to make a defense for anyone who asks for a reason for the hope that is in you, in us.

    42:14-42:18

The question, church, as we close, as our worship team comes up, Are you prepared?

    42:20-42:21

    Are you prepared?

    42:22-42:24

    The days are coming, church.

    42:25-42:39

The days are coming, church, that you're either going to have to pretend you don't know Jesus like Peter did during Jesus' trial, or you're going to boldly stand on the truth of Jesus like Peter did in Acts 4.

    42:41-42:42

    Are you ready for that?

    42:44-42:50

Church, you know, maybe Maybe like Peter, maybe you blew it before.

    42:51-42:57

Maybe like Peter, you had an opportunity to share the Gospel and you blew it.

    42:58-43:02

You had an opportunity to stand for Christ and you blew it.

    43:04-43:06

Like Peter did when Jesus was on trial.

    43:07-43:12

But also like Peter, you're going to get another chance to do it right.

    43:13-43:16

As we bow our heads in prayer prayer team comes forward.

    43:17-43:30

We're going to pray that we allow God's Spirit to give us power to witness, to be bold witnesses even when we have to deal with haters.

    43:31-43:32

    Let's pray.

    43:32-43:36

Father in Heaven, we thank You for the truth of Your Word.

    43:38-43:42

And it is Your Word that gives us the authority to make the statements that we make.

    43:43-43:47

don't make up the message, but Father, You've called us to broadcast it.

    43:47-43:48

You've called us to be witnesses.

    43:50-43:52

And Father, we know what motivates You is love.

    43:54-44:02

We know, Father, that we can't stand and say, "believe anything you want," because that's going to send people to hell.

    44:04-44:06

It is Your heart that people are saved.

    44:07-44:12

It is Your heart that they know the name the only One who can save them.

    44:14-44:15

And that name is Jesus Christ.

    44:16-44:17

    God in the flesh.

    44:19-44:20

    Crucified for our sins.

    44:20-44:22

    Resurrected for our life.

    44:24-44:38

But Father, I'm sure there are some people in this room right now who maybe feel the pressure of people challenging them on their faith or what they're teaching.

    44:39-44:39

    to witness.

    44:42-44:44

Father, there are people here that that's coming real soon.

    44:45-44:46

    I don't know how.

    44:47-44:51

I've seen it show up a lot in my own life in a lot of really weird ways.

    44:53-44:57

I pray, Father, for all of us that You would equip us.

    44:57-45:00

And yes, we should be equipped by studying Your Word.

    45:00-45:04

And yes, we should be equipped by taking opportunities to witness.

    45:04-45:11

But the number one way that we are going to be equipped and prepared by living in the power of your Holy Spirit.

    45:13-45:15

Because that is where we get the ability to be witnesses.

    45:18-45:20

Father, we don't want to shrink back.

    45:21-45:23

We want to go forth not in arrogance.

    45:25-45:26

We want to go forth in humility.

    45:28-45:37

But with a godly boldness and confidence that says we are witnesses, even in the face of those who would hate.

    45:38-45:40

    Give us opportunities, Father.

    45:41-45:44

Let us honor You when those opportunities come.

    45:45-45:47

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

  • 00:01-00:05

Open up your Bibles with me please to Acts 3.

    00:07-00:08

    Acts 3.

    00:09-00:12

This is a quick review where we left off in the book of Acts.

    00:13-00:19

Remember we saw that Jesus promised the disciples - this is our theme for the year.

    00:19-00:22

Everything in the book of Acts comes from Acts 1.8.

    00:23-00:37

Jesus promised His disciples, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you." Jesus said He was going to ascend into heaven, and He did, and after He ascended, the Holy Spirit was going to come and indwell God's people.

    00:39-00:41

Jesus said you will receive power.

    00:41-00:46

And I question Jesus, why are we going to receive power?

    00:47-00:51

Well, Jesus said the reason that we receive His power is so that we may be His witnesses.

    00:52-00:58

He said you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the earth.

    00:59-01:00

    I've shared with you before.

    01:00-01:02

That's how ministry is set up at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    01:02-01:06

    Judea - your immediate backyard.

    01:07-01:12

You should be inviting friends and family and neighbors to come and worship with you here at Harvest Bible Chapel.

    01:13-01:15

Judea and Samaria - that's what our small group does.

    01:15-01:17

That's getting out into the community.

    01:17-01:22

At Ends of the World, we are involved in mission work where we send people to Romania.

    01:22-01:24

I was in Thailand in November.

    01:24-01:25

That's the end of the world.

    01:25-01:26

    The mission is the same.

    01:29-01:31

The glorious news is the power is still the same.

    01:32-01:36

The power of God's Holy Spirit living within us.

    01:36-01:39

So, Jesus ascends to heaven and the Holy Spirit comes.

    01:39-01:46

And on Pentecost, Peter preached Christ and 3,000 people got saved.

    01:46-01:49

And then we saw the power of unity in the early church.

    01:49-01:54

And when we got to Acts 3, last time, do you remember?

    01:54-01:59

Peter and John, walking into the temple, He healed a lame beggar.

    02:00-02:04

And everyone recognized this man and they were amazed.

    02:05-02:06

    It drew quite a crowd.

    02:06-02:08

And then Peter got up to preach.

    02:10-02:31

Before we look at the text, just kind of setting the stage here, you know, just like in Pentecost when the Lord was having the apostles speak in other languages and that drew a crowd, here we get to Acts 3 And the healing of this lame man draws another crowd.

    02:31-02:36

You know, there are times that God just does things to get people's attention.

    02:38-02:41

The question is what do you do when you have that opportunity?

    02:43-02:45

You know what I'm talking about, right?

    02:46-02:49

You know, I think of the Stroops last year.

    02:50-02:53

Little Milo being in the hospital and the way God was at work in their lives.

    02:55-02:59

And that gave them opportunity to talk about the Lord with people.

    03:00-03:03

And there are things that God's going to bring into your life.

    03:05-03:09

Many of you know last week - this time last week, my wife was in ICU.

    03:10-03:13

She was in a life-threatening situation with some diabetic complications.

    03:14-03:17

And this week, she feels better than ever.

    03:17-03:19

And that's the power of prayer.

    03:21-03:27

But that gives me an opportunity Tell people, this is the power of God.

    03:28-03:31

Let me tell you the difference that Jesus Christ can make in your life.

    03:33-03:42

So when God gives you opportunity, whatever He's doing in your life, when He gives you opportunity, what do you do when you get that opportunity?

    03:44-03:46

You know, it comes at work sometimes, right?

    03:46-03:58

Maybe you're having a conversation and somebody brings up God or the Bible or church, and you feel like, you know, I really probably maybe should say something right now since the subject is on the table.

    03:58-03:59

    What do you do?

    04:00-04:02

What do you do when that family member is in crisis?

    04:03-04:05

And it's so obvious to you as a follower of Christ.

    04:05-04:07

I know exactly what this person needs.

    04:08-04:11

This person needs to give their life to Jesus Christ.

    04:11-04:16

This person needs to - how do I roll that out to a family member?

    04:16-04:19

What do you do when you have and the authority to witness.

    04:21-04:23

That's what we're going to be talking about this morning.

    04:24-04:33

Again, Acts 1:8 God gave us power of the Holy Spirit so that we would be witnesses for Him.

    04:34-04:36

In Harvest Bible Chapel, we sit on four pillars.

    04:37-04:40

The first pillar is proclaiming the authority of God's Word without apology.

    04:41-04:42

We believe God wrote a book.

    04:42-04:48

That's why every week when somebody stands up here We preach it comes from the Word of God.

    04:49-04:53

Our second pillar is lifting high the name of Jesus in worship.

    04:54-04:56

And we certainly did that this morning.

    04:57-04:58

    Spirit and truth.

    04:59-05:01

Our third pillar is believing firmly in the power of prayer.

    05:02-05:05

I've seen that in a very graphic way this past week in our own home.

    05:06-05:11

But you know, we have this fourth pillar that for a lot of us, it's very uncomfortable.

    05:12-05:15

And the fourth pillar is sharing in the views of Jesus with boldness.

    05:17-05:18

Witnessing scares a lot of us.

    05:19-05:21

    We're afraid of rejection.

    05:21-05:22

    We're afraid of hostility.

    05:22-05:25

We're afraid that people might think we're weirdos.

    05:26-05:28

We're afraid of questions that we might get.

    05:29-05:32

I'd like to remind you that Jesus' last command is my first priority.

    05:34-05:46

The last thing Jesus told the disciples before He ascended was, "You're going to be My witnesses." as a pastor, understand that my job is to help equip you for the work of the ministry.

    05:47-05:50

So we're going to do something a little bit different with the text today.

    05:51-06:06

As we look at this sermon that Peter gives in Acts 3, we're not just going to be looking at what Peter shared, but what I want you to do today is I want you to look at how Peter shared the Gospel.

    06:08-06:15

Studying this passage this week, This is the most comprehensive Gospel sermon that someone could imagine.

    06:16-06:24

Because Peter covers all of the major themes, all of the important things that you've got to talk about when you're sharing the Gospel with someone.

    06:25-06:26

And I want us to look at those ingredients.

    06:27-06:37

And as we look at these ingredients and as we trust in the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus gave, we are going to grow as more effective witnesses for Jesus Christ.

    06:38-06:43

In your outline, I tried to sort of simplify it.

    06:43-06:44

We have a big chunk of text here.

    06:45-06:50

So in your outline, how to witness three things you need to make clear.

    06:52-06:59

Number one is this, when you're witnessing to somebody, we're going to take a lesson off of Peter here.

    06:59-07:03

Number one, make it clear this is about God.

    07:05-07:06

    This is about God.

    07:06-07:07

    in verses 11 and 12.

    07:09-07:13

It says, "He - that's the beggar that was just healed - well, he clung to Peter and John.

    07:13-07:19

All the people, utterly astounded, ran together to them in the portico called Solomon's.

    07:19-07:26

And when Peter saw it, he addressed the people." So we're going to look at how Peter preached.

    07:26-07:27

    Everybody with me?

    07:27-07:28

Look at the first thing he says.

    07:29-07:34

"Men of Israel, why do you wonder at this?

    07:34-07:44

"Why do you stare at us as though by our own power or piety we have made Him walk?" Let's stop there.

    07:44-07:52

The first thing Peter did right out of the gate and the thing I would commend to you right out of the gate when you're witnessing - make it clear this is about God.

    07:53-08:02

Peter said, "Why are you looking at us?" And if we're honest, we can sort of understand why the crowd seemed fixated on them.

    08:02-08:04

    I mean, let's be honest.

    08:04-08:05

    You can understand that, right?

    08:06-08:07

    Here's a lame guy.

    08:07-08:08

    He's been there forever.

    08:08-08:09

    Everybody knows this guy.

    08:09-08:16

And all of a sudden, Peter and John stroll through and they're like, "In the name of Jesus, get up!" And the guy's now walking around.

    08:16-08:21

Of course, people are going to look to them like, these guys are like superheroes.

    08:21-08:23

    How did you do that?

    08:24-08:26

Peter very quickly says, "No, no, no, no, no.

    08:27-08:28

    Don't look at us.

    08:28-08:39

We have power to do that." In church, it's really easy - you're looking at this point right now, this is about God, I can't believe we're talking about this in church, isn't this obvious?

    08:40-08:45

It's really easy sometimes when we're witnessing to think that it's about us.

    08:48-08:50

For positive reasons and for negative reasons.

    08:51-08:52

    Let me explain.

    08:54-08:57

Sometimes we think it's about us for good reasons.

    08:58-09:01

my personality, my creativity, my popularity.

    09:04-09:05

It's a weekly struggle for me.

    09:07-09:10

And I pray this so often you have no idea.

    09:11-09:14

I say, God, I don't want to put on a show.

    09:14-09:15

I don't want to draw people to myself.

    09:15-09:19

I want to passionately explain Your Word.

    09:21-09:32

I'm constantly praying that, God, I don't want people leaving here and saying, "Jeff is a good speaker." I don't want that because there's a part of me that wants that.

    09:33-09:34

    But I don't want that.

    09:35-09:37

Because it's not about me, it's about God.

    09:40-09:41

It's real easy to say look what I did.

    09:42-09:48

I had somebody tell me one time they were out street preaching and witnessing and handing out tracts, which I think is incredible.

    09:49-09:52

But what I didn't like was their evaluation of the results.

    09:53-09:57

and said, "I saved 17 people last night." And I said, "Oh, you did?

    09:59-10:03

I did not know you were the Savior." But we start to think it's about us.

    10:05-10:09

For the good, but another danger is we start to think it's about us maybe for the bad.

    10:10-10:14

That we try to witness and then we walk away and we're like, "I'm the worst witness ever!

    10:15-10:17

    I don't know enough!

    10:17-10:18

    What if I blew it?

    10:18-10:20

    Should have said more?

    10:20-10:34

Should have said less?" You know, they ask some questions You know the answer to, all in favor of a word of encouragement, the pressure isn't on us to save anyone.

    10:36-10:38

None of us can save anyone.

    10:38-10:43

Jesus didn't promise that we would receive power to save, did He?

    10:44-10:46

What did He say? We would receive power to what?

    10:47-10:48

    Go ahead and say it.

    10:49-10:49

    Witness!

    10:50-10:54

He said we'd receive power to witness, What power to save?

    10:55-10:57

    That's his department exclusively.

    11:00-11:04

Because the tool is not the thing.

    11:04-11:06

Nobody gives credit to the guitar.

    11:07-11:13

I don't see people after worship coming up going, "You did such a good job today.

    11:13-11:18

That was really good what you did today." Nobody gives credit to that thing.

    11:19-11:21

The credit goes to the one that's using it.

    11:23-11:27

Nobody gives credit to the paintbrush or to the hammer.

    11:29-11:30

It goes to the one using it.

    11:30-11:33

And for us, we're just tools in God's hand.

    11:35-11:35

    So what do we do?

    11:36-11:37

How do we make this about God?

    11:38-11:46

Well, we're going to get to this here in just a couple of minutes, but especially in the latter part of this passage, Peter quotes Scripture.

    11:48-11:54

Church, the Holy Spirit's power is going to manifest through the proclaiming of the Word of God.

    11:56-11:57

    Not your thoughts or opinions.

    11:59-12:02

The Holy Spirit works with the Word of God.

    12:04-12:07

We're going to see Peter model that so effectively.

    12:08-12:18

So church, when you're witnessing to make it about God, first of all, no glory for myself, but also, make sure you're sharing to share the Bible with people.

    12:20-12:24

God's Word is what God's Holy Spirit uses to get God's results.

    12:26-12:28

I want to give you a couple of practical tips.

    12:29-12:30

    Jot these down.

    12:32-12:36

Number one, you should know what you want to share with people when you have the opportunity.

    12:38-12:42

You should have some Scriptures in mind to share with people when you have the opportunity.

    12:45-12:51

In my opinion, the easiest - Romans 3.23, Romans 6.23.

    12:53-12:58

Romans 3.23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." I talk to people about that.

    12:58-12:59

Have you ever done anything wrong?

    13:01-13:03

Have you ever known the right thing to do and you did something different?

    13:03-13:04

    Have you ever sinned?

    13:06-13:07

    Okay, we have a problem.

    13:07-13:13

But Romans 6.23 says, "The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life Jesus Christ our Lord.

    13:15-13:17

That's sharing the Word of God.

    13:17-13:26

Whether you use those or some verses from the Gospels or whatever, you should have a couple of verses in mind that you want to share with people when you have the opportunity.

    13:28-13:42

The second thing that I want to commend to you that I didn't really understand for years, but when you're sharing, you need to share as much as they want, as much as you want.

    13:44-13:57

There have been so many times that I've had people in my office, I'm like, I'm going to share the Gospel with this guy, and I'm sitting there for an hour going through the Bible, and this one guy in particular, I just remember he sat there with his arms folded.

    13:57-13:59

Literally, this was the look he had in his face.

    14:01-14:04

He wasn't even trying to mask it like I'm pretending to be interested.

    14:08-14:15

I look back on that and realize I was sharing long after he was done listening.

    14:18-14:21

Share as much as they want, not as much as you want.

    14:22-14:23

    Because some people aren't ready.

    14:27-14:32

That's why sometimes when I go to share the Gospel with people, I ask them, would you like to know what the Bible says?

    14:32-14:33

    Would you like to know?

    14:37-14:40

You find that the circumstances of life ripen people to the Gospel.

    14:40-14:44

Maybe somebody that you're trying to witness to now isn't ready, but maybe they'll be ready tomorrow.

    14:46-14:55

Maybe the next time they see you, they've had a financial collapse, or they've had an illness come into their family, and they weren't too interested in the things of God then, but they sure are now.

    15:00-15:01

    So make it about God.

    15:01-15:03

    Make it about God's Word.

    15:05-15:11

Another glorious thing about making it about God's Word is when they reject the Gospel, if they reject the Gospel, they're not rejecting you.

    15:12-15:13

    They're rejecting God.

    15:17-15:22

You know, you could say, "Well, I think you need to come to church." And they're like, "Well, I don't want to come to your church." No, you just have a battle of opinions.

    15:23-15:29

Instead if you say, "You know, the Bible says that all sin and falsehood are the glory of God." They say, "Well, I don't believe that." Well, now they're at issues with God, not with you, right?

    15:31-15:32

    Share the Word of God.

    15:34-15:35

    Number one, make it clear.

    15:35-15:36

    This is about God.

    15:36-15:38

It's not about you or me or HBCU.

    15:38-15:39

    It's about God.

    15:41-15:44

    Secondly, make it clear.

    15:45-15:49

We are guilty, but God is gracious.

    15:52-15:55

We're going to look at verses 13-16 here first of all.

    15:56-15:58

    Look what Peter launches into.

    16:00-16:04

Might I suggest to you something quite different than some of the people you see on television.

    16:08-16:10

Peter getting into the meat of his sermon here.

    16:10-16:28

He says the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified His servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate when He had decided to release Him.

    16:31-16:36

as you denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked for a murderer to be granted to you.

    16:36-16:41

And you killed the Author of life whom God raised from the dead.

    16:41-16:43

    To this we are witnesses.

    16:45-16:51

And His name, by faith in His name, has made this man strong whom you see." That's the lame guy that got healed.

    16:52-16:54

"Has made this man strong whom you see and know.

    16:55-17:06

And the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all." Peter comes right out of the gate.

    17:08-17:13

He's like, "Alright guys, by the way, you're guilty." Remember Jesus?

    17:14-17:19

And Pilate was like, "I find no fault in this man." Like what, six times or something?

    17:19-17:21

Pilate's like, "I just want to let him go.

    17:23-17:25

I don't see anything wrong with him.

    17:25-17:28

He's an innocent man." And Peter's like, "Yeah, you remember that?

    17:29-17:29

    That's what you did?

    17:30-17:31

    Standing in the crowd.

    17:31-17:33

Kill Him! Crucify Him! Crucify Him!

    17:33-17:34

    You remember that.

    17:38-17:39

He says you killed the Author of life.

    17:43-17:56

Peter says, "And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance also as your rulers, but what God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets that His Christ would suffer, He thus fulfilled.

    17:59-18:04

So then Peter turns around and says, this was God's plan.

    18:06-18:11

You killed Him, but this was God's plan.

    18:14-18:25

So when you're sharing the Gospel, you have to make really crystal clear that we are guilty, God is gracious.

    18:27-18:29

The message is both, and we have to share both.

    18:30-18:35

Some people sort of lean towards the "you are guilty" side.

    18:37-18:45

And some people lean towards preaching a message that is just God is gracious.

    18:46-18:47

You know, preachers like that, right?

    18:49-18:49

    You are guilty.

    18:52-18:57

standing on a self-righteous platform preaching down to people, "You are dirt!

    18:57-18:58

    You are a hopeless sinner!

    18:59-19:00

You should be ashamed of yourself!

    19:01-19:01

    Look at you!

    19:03-19:05

God's judgment is coming on you!

    19:05-19:13

Prepare yourself!" It's just all guilt, just all beating up, just all making people ashamed.

    19:15-19:16

    No grace.

    19:17-19:29

When we were kids at the Methodist church that we went to growing up, There was this one part of a church service that I dreaded every single week as a kid.

    19:30-19:35

And it was the part where they called all the kids in the church to come up front.

    19:36-19:40

And then the preacher's wife would give a little message to the kids.

    19:40-19:41

    Do you remember that, Derek?

    19:41-19:42

    I hated that.

    19:42-19:49

I remember every week just like sweating in the pew like, "Oh, I hope they don't do that this week." I hated that part of the service.

    19:51-19:58

For one, I just hate the thought of standing in front of the church or being in front of the church.

    19:58-19:59

    That really makes me queasy.

    20:00-20:27

But the other thing is that the preacher's wife - you know, we're like six, seven-year-old little kids, and the preacher's wife - we'd sit down and we'd have our dress shirts half tucked in, and we're sitting down ready for our children's sermon, and she'd be like, "You're going to hell, you little sinners!" That was like her sermon.

    20:27-20:32

And I remember just like, don't make me go up there!

    20:34-20:37

But some preachers, that's what they communicate.

    20:38-20:41

But then there are some that go to the other side of the spectrum.

    20:45-20:47

    And it's just grace.

    20:50-20:54

To say, you know, God has a wonderful plan for your life.

    20:55-20:57

And just ask Jesus into your heart.

    20:58-21:01

And you too can have God's best in every day as a Friday.

    21:03-21:04

    Or something like that.

    21:05-21:06

    But there's no mention.

    21:07-21:08

    There's no mention of sin.

    21:08-21:10

    There's no call to turn.

    21:10-21:13

There's no mention of transformation by the power of the Spirit.

    21:13-21:15

There's no mention of real life change.

    21:16-21:19

But do you notice in this passage, do you notice Peter brought both?

    21:20-21:21

Peter brought both in the same verse.

    21:21-21:27

He's like, "You killed the author of life!" But this was God's plan because He loves you and wants to save you.

    21:28-21:29

    He gives both.

    21:31-21:34

He gives both the hurt and the healing.

    21:35-21:36

But I want you to notice something.

    21:37-21:39

    Look at v. 17 again.

    21:39-21:41

This is so important when you're sharing the Gospel with people.

    21:42-21:43

Do you see what Peter interjects here?

    21:44-21:58

He says, "And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers." There's a sense in which Peter here came alongside the people that he was preaching to.

    21:58-22:03

He wasn't preaching down on them, but he's sort of sharing beside them.

    22:04-22:07

And this comes from genuine compassion for the person.

    22:09-22:11

You see, Peter didn't look at these people as a project.

    22:12-22:14

And you shouldn't look at your co-worker as a project.

    22:14-22:16

Well, I'm going to get this guy out of church.

    22:16-22:17

    That's my goal for 2016.

    22:17-22:18

I'm going to get this guy out of church.

    22:19-22:20

    He ain't your project.

    22:21-22:22

    Peter had genuine compassion.

    22:22-22:24

That's how he was able to come alongside them.

    22:25-22:30

And there's a sense in which he's sympathizing with them.

    22:32-22:36

Say, look, you acted in ignorance.

    22:37-22:37

    You did.

    22:38-22:44

It's sort of like Jesus - 2334, when Jesus was being crucified.

    22:44-22:45

    You remember what He prayed?

    22:45-22:47

    "Father, forgive them." Why?

    22:49-22:57

"For they do not know what they're doing." And Peter's sort of echoing that sentiment from Jesus to say, "Look, yes, you're wrong.

    22:59-23:01

And I know you acted in ignorance.

    23:03-23:16

And when you sympathize with people, you're coming alongside them." That's something I like to do to share the Gospel with people is include myself in this to say look, that was me.

    23:17-23:18

    Yes, you're a sinner.

    23:19-23:22

Yes, you're alienated from God, but look, that was me too.

    23:23-23:24

    I need this message.

    23:25-23:28

Look, I'm not just standing here telling you that you need a Savior.

    23:28-23:30

I'm saying that we need a Savior.

    23:31-23:32

    I'm the same as you.

    23:33-23:35

    Born a sinner. Lost. Rebellious.

    23:35-23:36

    I need Christ.

    23:36-23:38

You need Christ just as much as I need Christ.

    23:40-23:41

    We're in the same boat.

    23:42-23:43

    We're both guilty of sin.

    23:43-23:45

    We both deserve God's judgment.

    23:45-23:54

But the good news is God loves us and He made a way so that our sins can be completely forgiven so that we can be born again so that we can be children of God.

    23:56-24:01

People aren't interested in the Savior until they know they need saved.

    24:02-24:06

People don't know they need forgiveness so they know they've offended a holy God.

    24:07-24:12

People are going to see the good news of the Gospel as good news if they don't understand the bad news.

    24:13-24:16

That's why Peter walked them through this to say, yeah, you know what?

    24:16-24:18

You guys did a horrible thing.

    24:18-24:19

    And you are guilty.

    24:21-24:22

    But God had a plan.

    24:23-24:25

So make it clear, we are guilty, but God is gracious.

    24:27-24:30

And lastly, number three, write this down.

    24:31-24:33

and make it clear a response is required.

    24:35-24:37

    A response is required.

    24:39-24:50

I don't know what your translation says, but into verse 18, "God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets that His Christ would suffer.

    24:52-25:01

He thus fulfilled." My Bible doesn't say, "Then Peter walked away and said, Well, FYI, have a nice day.

    25:03-25:06

    You notice, he keeps going.

    25:07-25:15

Because what he's showing them, what I'm going to show you, people need to understand when you witness to them, is a response is required.

    25:15-25:17

They have to do something with the message.

    25:19-25:21

    Jesus died for your sins.

    25:22-25:26

Just thought you'd like to know Your response is required.

    25:28-25:34

Sometimes people think that they're Christian by default because it's just unclear to them that they need to make a decision.

    25:35-25:39

There's times that you're maybe sharing with somebody that's not even hostile towards Jesus.

    25:39-25:43

They might even be agreeing with your message, but they haven't embraced it.

    25:45-25:50

And when you're sharing the Gospel, you need to call on a response, a decision.

    25:50-25:52

What are you going to do with this message?

    25:54-26:02

if you have a terminal illness and the doctor prescribes pills that will cure it, you can get on the Internet and read up on them.

    26:02-26:03

    You can study.

    26:03-26:06

I agree that these things are going to cure my illness.

    26:07-26:12

And you can set them on the shelf, but they're not going to do you any good unless you act upon the knowledge.

    26:13-26:14

So we don't want to stop short.

    26:15-26:16

    Look at what Peter does.

    26:17-26:17

    (incomplete thought)

    26:18-26:20

So what should we do as a result of all this, Peter?

    26:21-26:32

In verse 19, he says, "Repent." "Repent therefore and turn again that your sins may be blotted out." He says repent. Turn back.

    26:32-26:33

We're going to see again in verse 26.

    26:33-26:35

    Turn from wickedness.

    26:37-26:40

Which is always step one in coming to God.

    26:41-26:47

Repentance literally means a change of mind or a change of purpose which results in a change of action.

    26:50-26:51

Turning to the Gospel means you share repentance.

    26:54-26:55

And repentance is just simply this.

    26:55-27:00

By nature, I'm walking in my sin and I'm walking away from God.

    27:01-27:04

Repentance means I change my mind about that.

    27:04-27:08

To say I'm enjoying this sin and I'm turning my back on God.

    27:08-27:10

    Repentance means I turn around.

    27:10-27:14

I turn my back on my sin and I walk toward with God.

    27:16-27:16

    That's repentance.

    27:20-27:20

    from sin.

    27:21-27:24

Like what in the world would motivate somebody to turn this ship around?

    27:26-27:30

Like Peter, he gives two motivations you need to share with people.

    27:30-27:31

    Look at verse 19.

    27:31-27:35

The first one, he says, that your sins may be blotted out.

    27:37-27:39

Your sins may be blotted out.

    27:40-27:48

The times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, that He may send to Christ, appointed for you, Jesus!

    27:50-27:50

    Stop there.

    27:52-27:54

First benefit in repentance is this - there's benefits for you.

    27:55-27:56

    First motivation, rather.

    27:57-27:59

First motivation for repentance is there are benefits for you.

    28:01-28:02

    Like what benefits?

    28:02-28:07

Well, Peter says receiving Christ means that your sins are blotted out.

    28:09-28:11

God no longer holds your sin against you.

    28:11-28:13

You're not guilty. There's no shame.

    28:14-28:15

    Your record is erased.

    28:18-28:20

God will never hold your sins against you.

    28:20-28:21

    They're blotted out. They're gone.

    28:23-28:27

That's an immediate benefit, but notice Peter also gave a long-term benefit.

    28:28-28:30

He said times of refreshing would come.

    28:30-28:33

He's looking to the end of the age, but he's ultimately looking at Heaven.

    28:35-28:40

You know, turning to Christ, there's benefits now, but there's also benefits long-term, stepping into eternity.

    28:42-28:43

    He gives a second benefit.

    28:44-28:45

    Look at verse 21 again.

    28:45-28:59

He says, "Whom Heaven must receive, until the time for restoration of all things, about which God spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets long ago." Something else that Peter is pointing out to the crowd is simply this - time is running out.

    29:01-29:02

    Time is running out.

    29:02-29:04

You realize history has a finish line.

    29:06-29:10

And we would also say that your life on earth has a finish line.

    29:12-29:14

and you don't have forever to make a decision.

    29:16-29:17

    There's urgency in the Gospel.

    29:18-29:20

What if this was your last day on earth?

    29:21-29:24

Do you really want to step into eternity not knowing where you'll end up?

    29:24-29:26

The good news is you can know exactly where you're going to end up.

    29:27-29:29

Because God's made a promise through Jesus Christ.

    29:32-29:33

    Today's the day.

    29:34-29:35

Today's the day. Time's running out.

    29:36-29:36

    That's the urgency.

    29:37-30:02

I've shared with you before one time I was sharing a Gospel with a guy "So, you mean to tell me that I can live my whole life the way that I want, and if I receive Jesus on my deathbed, then I'll go to heaven? Is that true?" And I said, "Well, that's technically true, yeah, I guess." And he said, "Well, I'll just do that." And I said, "No, you won't." He said, "What do you mean, 'No, I won't'?" I said, "You're not going to do that.

    30:04-30:06

How can you say that?" I said, "Well, I can say that for two reasons.

    30:08-30:11

is, how do you know you're going to have a deathbed?

    30:13-30:31

You know, this idea that someday I'm going to be lived to be 99 years old, and I'm going to be in bed, resting comfortably, and my family's going to be around, and then the minister's going to come, and that's the day I'll receive Jesus, and then five minutes after I pray the prayer, I'll step right into heaven.

    30:32-30:33

How do you know you're going to have a deathbed?

    30:36-30:39

    heart attack, stroke, car accidents.

    30:41-30:44

There are so many ways that your life can be over in an instant.

    30:46-30:51

So banking on this deathbed idea, that's more rare than you think it is.

    30:52-30:57

I said, but there's another reason that you're not going to give your life to Christ in your deathbed, and that's simply this.

    30:58-31:04

For you to do that would require that you've spent this moment of your life forward constantly saying no to God.

    31:04-31:06

And the Bible says that when you do that, to harden your heart.

    31:07-31:15

Do you mean to tell me you're going to spend decades hardening your heart to God, and then all of a sudden at the last second your heart is warm and tender and open for the love of Jesus Christ?

    31:16-31:20

Your heart is going to be so calloused at that point, you're not going to want to hear the name of Jesus.

    31:21-31:24

Don't give me this deathbed story, okay?

    31:27-31:28

    Today's the day of salvation.

    31:28-31:29

    There's urgency.

    31:30-31:30

    There's urgency.

    31:32-31:38

And you need to show people from the Bible - That Jesus is someone you have to deal with eventually.

    31:40-31:41

    And you have some options.

    31:43-31:46

The Bible says that Jesus is a lamb, and the Bible says that Jesus is a lion.

    31:49-31:50

Which one would you rather deal with?

    31:52-31:54

He's the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

    31:56-31:58

But when He comes back, He's the Lion of Judah.

    31:59-32:02

And it's not to sacrifice Himself for His people.

    32:02-32:04

He's already done that the second time He comes back.

    32:05-32:08

and take care of all the people that have rejected their Creator.

    32:10-32:12

I want you to see that's exactly what Peter does.

    32:14-32:21

He shows the people through Scripture that Jesus is someone that they have to deal with.

    32:21-32:23

    Pick up in v. 22.

    32:23-32:30

He says, "Moses said, 'The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.

    32:30-33:05

You shall listen to Him in whatever He tells you, and it shall be that every soul "And all the prophets who have spoken from Samuel and those who came after him also proclaim these days, 'You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham,'" more Scripture, Genesis 22, 18, "'and in your offspring shall all the families of Israel be destroyed.'" of the earth be blessed.

    33:07-33:11

God's promise to Abraham to bless the world, that promise was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

    33:13-33:21

God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.

    33:23-33:29

Using scripture, Peter showed them, Jesus is someone that you have to deal with eventually.

    33:31-33:32

    The church, don't be discouraged.

    33:34-33:36

when your opportunity comes to witness.

    33:36-33:39

Remember that salvation is the work of the Holy Spirit.

    33:39-33:44

He gives you power to be His witnesses, but the work of salvation is His.

    33:44-33:48

And it always helps me to sort of keep this mindset when I'm witnessing to people.

    33:48-33:52

You know, believe me, I wish that every day was Pentecost.

    33:53-33:57

That anybody I shared the Gospel with immediately ran to get their baptism clothes on.

    33:58-33:59

    That's not always the case.

    33:59-34:05

But can you keep the mindset of wherever this person is with the Lord, Can I help them get one step closer?

    34:07-34:08

If you really want to grow as a witness.

    34:09-34:18

If you're really radical about wanting to grow as a witness, the best way to do it is by witnessing.

    34:19-34:20

    It's like prayer, right?

    34:21-34:22

You want to grow as a prayer?

    34:22-34:24

You know the best way to learn how to pray?

    34:24-34:25

    By praying.

    34:26-34:28

The best way to learn how to be a witness?

    34:29-34:29

    By witnessing.

    34:30-34:33

I've shared with you before, I love the prison ministry.

    34:34-34:39

You go in for two hours and you're just sharing the Gospel with these people who are hungry to hear it.

    34:39-34:46

I'll tell you what, I wasn't so great at it by day one, but I'll tell you what, by like the 300th time I did it, I got a little better at it.

    34:48-34:51

We're always looking for more people to get involved in that ministry, right Mark?

    34:53-34:54

    You'll grow as a witness.

    34:54-34:56

So above all things, you want to be clear.

    34:57-34:58

You want to be clear with the message.

    34:58-34:59

    It's about God.

    35:00-35:04

You want to be clear that you're a sinner, but God is gracious.

    35:06-35:10

You want to be clear that you have to respond to this message.

    35:11-35:19

Maybe there's somebody here that you have somebody that you've been wanting to share with, but you just haven't been sure what to say or how to say it.

    35:20-35:23

We want to invite you to come down front with our prayer team.

    35:23-35:25

We want you to pray for that person that you want to witness too.

    35:26-35:36

But while you're praying, You also need to be praying for yourself that you would get that opportunity and that you would seize that opportunity.

    35:39-35:45

We have power from God's Holy Spirit to be Christ's witnesses.

    35:47-35:51

Father in Heaven, we thank You for Your Word.

    35:52-36:00

Father, I thank You for this incredible sermon that we have recorded in Your Word Peter shows us how to share the Gospel.

    36:01-36:07

He showed us how to keep it God-centered and how to talk about sin and grace at the same time.

    36:08-36:10

And how to call people to a response.

    36:12-36:16

He showed us how to sympathize with people and come alongside them.

    36:16-36:21

Not just beating people up, but showing how to be healed.

    36:23-36:40

Father, I pray for this church We know that it's not like we can just open the doors of Marshall Middle School and people that need to know you are just going to somehow mysteriously meander in to give us the opportunity to witness here.

    36:41-36:53

We know that your witnesses are sitting in these seats right now where you send us to work, who we live beside, who our family members are.

    36:54-36:56

You are the missionaries to those people.

    36:58-37:00

And so often, Father, we shrink back in fear.

    37:02-37:04

But You have not given us a spirit of fear.

    37:05-37:11

You have given us a Spirit - Your Spirit - that empowers us to be witnesses.

    37:13-37:15

So I pray, Father, for a godly confidence.

    37:17-37:24

I pray, Father, for more doors to open that we can talk about Your Son in His glorious Gospel.

    37:27-37:28

    Give us opportunity, Father.

    37:29-37:30

    Let us seize these opportunities.

    37:31-37:37

But through it all, Father, we're trusting You to do what only You can do, and that's Your Holy Spirit changing people's hearts.

    37:40-37:45

And we are just thankful for the privilege that You would use us at all.

    37:48-37:52

Let Your glory be on display as Your Gospel goes forth, we pray in Jesus' name.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 3:11-26

  • I think I will get serious about God later.

  • How can you know you are really saved?

  • It doesn’t really matter what you believe. Everyone is going to heaven if they are sincere.

  • 00:00-00:00

    Amen.

    00:02-00:15

Acts 3:1-10 And before we look at the passage, I want to say it's been about four or five years ago Cade got his first pet.

    00:17-00:21

    A betta fish named Marvin.

    00:22-00:25

And no, he didn't come with that name in case you were wondering.

    00:25-00:28

That was all Cade - wasn't that like four or five years ago?

    00:29-00:30

    We've had this fish forever.

    00:31-00:40

I thought betta fish lived like a couple of months and then you, you know, you give them the nice little funeral and flush them and everything else and we've had this fish forever.

    00:42-00:52

What was about two or three years ago, one morning, Kate was very concerned because Marvin, you know betta fish, right?

    00:52-00:54

You know what a betta fish looks like?

    00:54-00:57

They have those long fin things, you know what I'm talking about, right?

    00:57-01:00

and usually they're all in a line and flowing.

    01:01-01:11

Well, Kate was very concerned because Marvin was in his aquarium and he was kind of swimming sideways, and those fin things were just all over the place.

    01:13-01:13

    Disheveled.

    01:14-01:17

I didn't know a fish could get disheveled, but a fish can get disheveled.

    01:17-01:19

Did you know that? I did not know that.

    01:20-01:26

But Marvin was as close as you can get to floating without actually floating.

    01:29-01:30

    And Cade was pretty concerned.

    01:31-01:41

So, I said, "You know what, let's just sit down right now and we're going to pray for Marvin." And we sat down and we held hands.

    01:43-01:45

We lifted Marvin the betta fish up to the Lord.

    01:48-01:56

And do you know, that fish was immediately, and dare I say miraculously healed.

    01:57-01:59

    Marvin made an immediate rebound.

    01:59-02:00

    He's still alive today.

    02:01-02:03

You can come to our house and meet him if you like.

    02:05-02:12

And I share that story because, you know, I don't want to sound like a whiner or a complainer.

    02:14-02:21

I certainly don't want to sound like I'm questioning the Lord, but I've been praying for my kids for ten years.

    02:21-02:25

My kids have got some health issues, I've been praying for them for 10 years.

    02:29-02:30

    Seemingly unanswered.

    02:32-02:37

I prayed for a stupid fish one time, and I'm not even really sure how much I meant the prayer.

    02:39-02:42

And we prayed for a fish one time and he's immediately healed.

    02:44-02:45

How much sense does that make?

    02:47-02:54

I would like to offer to you though if you have any fish in your house that are looking a little under the weather, I make house calls.

    02:55-03:02

And I'll grab one of our elders - Darren Keller - and I will come to your house and we'll lay hands on your fish, and we will pray for your fish.

    03:03-03:05

But today we're going to be talking about healing.

    03:07-03:19

And we mentioned this before, but just to review, we saw in the life of Jesus that the reason He did the miracles that He performed - these miracles were to authenticate that the Father sent Him.

    03:20-03:29

The Bible tells us - this is so important, listen to this - the Lord also granted the apostles to be accredited by miracles.

    03:30-03:31

    Write this reference down.

    03:31-03:54

2 Corinthians 12:12 says, "The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with utmost patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works." Hebrews 2:3-4 talk about the same thing.

    03:55-04:02

The Lord granted the apostles to have these abilities to perform signs and wonders.

    04:02-04:06

Now obviously, it was the Lord performing these miracles through the apostles.

    04:08-04:12

But the apostles had a unique opportunity with their position.

    04:13-04:18

that they could perform these miracles.

    04:20-04:35

And again, this is review, but after the Bible was completed, after God was done writing His Word, the Holy Spirit was done writing His Word through these people, the miracles were no longer needed to authenticate the message.

    04:36-04:43

You see, you have these apostles running around saying, "I got this message from God." And people are like, We know this is from God.

    04:44-04:46

God backed it up with these miracles.

    04:46-04:57

And today when I stand before you and I say, "I have a message for you from God," your question might be, "Well, how can I authenticate that?" You can authenticate it by looking at what God's already revealed in His Word.

    04:58-05:02

The things that I'm sharing with you, do they line up with what God has written down?

    05:03-05:07

I don't need to perform miracles to authenticate my message.

    05:09-05:10

I have something better than miracles.

    05:12-05:19

I have the Word of God that you can take home and read for yourself to see if these things that I'm sharing with you are true.

    05:21-05:28

As my teaching and preaching, our elders, this church, what we teach doesn't line up with the Bible.

    05:30-05:40

Well, one of the gifts that was given to the apostles, and apparently to me when it comes to fish, the miracle, the gift of healing.

    05:41-05:45

In fact, Matthew 10, verse 1, Jesus granted them that ability.

    05:47-05:49

And I wanna talk about healing this morning.

    05:49-05:58

It's going to be in our passage, but I need to share some things with you about healing because there is so much confusion on this subject.

    06:00-06:01

    So much misinformation.

    06:03-06:23

You can turn on your TV and see these religious figures performing these signs, if you're like me, you can start to wonder, how legit is this?

    06:23-06:25

    Are they really healing people?

    06:26-06:28

Is there something else going on?

    06:30-06:33

What about these so-called healings today?

    06:35-06:36

    Please don't miss this.

    06:37-06:39

    God can heal.

    06:41-06:43

But you have to watch out for the phonies.

    06:46-06:52

God can heal, and God still heals.

    06:54-06:56

Somebody is going to leave church today.

    06:57-07:29

I promise you, somebody's going to leave church today and say, "Pastor Jeff doesn't believe that God can heal people." absolutely do. And I've seen it. I absolutely 100% with every cell in my body I believe that God can and does heal people. But we have to watch out for these phonies that are putting on these shows and performing these things.

    07:30-07:32

Like, "Well, what's up with these people on TV?

    07:33-07:35

You know, what's up with, you know, like Benny Hinn?

    07:35-07:53

Have you ever seen Benny Hinn?" Some of you are going to totally think this is hilarious and some of you are going to have no idea what I'm talking about, but when I was little, I knew that there were two sort of programs that were oriented for adults and one was Benny Hinn and one was Benny Hill.

    07:55-07:57

And I always got them confused.

    07:58-08:01

Mark, you're laughing because that's pretty funny, isn't it?

    08:01-08:03

Young people, you're going to have to go home and YouTube this.

    08:03-08:07

But I always thought Benny Hill and Benny Hinton were kind of the same thing.

    08:09-08:17

I just had this idea of like, yackety sax playing and this guy running around slapping people on the forehead and healing them.

    08:18-08:20

    What's going on with that?

    08:22-08:23

And we're not just picking on that.

    08:23-08:24

    There are others.

    08:25-08:33

But when we see these programs with these so-called preachers that have this power to heal, what's really going on there?

    08:35-08:36

    What's really going on?

    08:37-08:44

Well, some of the people that are being healed, some of them are plants.

    08:44-08:47

They're plants, meaning they're part of the show.

    08:49-08:54

You know, we could boost somebody's faith by letting them see this on TV.

    08:54-08:56

    So it's a show. It's a plant.

    08:56-08:56

    They're actors.

    08:58-09:05

Some of these so-called healings that you see are psychological in the moment.

    09:06-09:11

I believe that some of these people that come, they really believe that they are healed in the moment.

    09:12-09:26

You know, they're with the crowd and there's the big production going on and there's the television cameras It's this guy that we're looking up to that supposedly has the power to heal, and he puts his hands on me or he slaps me with his jacket or whatever he does.

    09:28-09:29

    It's psychological in the moment.

    09:30-09:31

You know what I mean by that?

    09:32-09:34

How can it be psychological in the moment?

    09:34-09:38

How can you feel healed or think that you're healed?

    09:39-09:40

    Think about it this way.

    09:40-09:41

How many people have seen Rocky?

    09:43-09:43

    Ok?

    09:43-09:45

How many people have seen the Karate Kid?

    09:46-09:47

    Okay?

    09:49-09:51

You know how it is with those kinds of movies.

    09:52-09:53

    We'll pick on Rocky.

    09:53-09:56

After you watch Rocky, don't you feel like you could just go out and whoop anybody?

    09:57-09:57

    Don't you?

    09:58-10:05

You watch Rocky, and you get, you know, you're playing Eye of the Tiger, and you feel like, yeah, yeah, I could whoop somebody.

    10:05-10:06

    You can't whoop anybody.

    10:08-10:11

You think that you can, because you're kind of caught up in the thing.

    10:11-10:15

And that's what happens with some of these So-called healings. You're caught up in the thing.

    10:17-10:19

And the thing is oftentimes a show.

    10:21-10:22

    Aaron and I laugh.

    10:22-10:34

We were watching one time just out of I guess entertainment value, but there was this woman came up to be healed, and she had this like 3 foot tall African headdress on.

    10:36-10:39

And the healer guy on TV was like POW!

    10:39-10:43

And he nails her with the healing zap or whatever that thing is.

    10:43-10:52

And as she's slain in the spirit and falling down, she grabs her headdress and makes sure that it doesn't like crumple as she goes to the ground.

    10:52-10:57

Like if you're really slain in the spirit and God's doing some miracle, are you concerned about your little headdress?

    10:57-10:59

Like, is that really what's going on there?

    10:59-11:01

    We've, I don't know.

    11:03-11:05

But some are plants, it's for shows.

    11:05-11:07

Some are psychological in the moment.

    11:07-11:08

It's a mind over matter thing.

    11:10-11:12

Maybe some of those people aren't really sick.

    11:13-11:14

    I don't know.

    11:16-11:17

    I don't know.

    11:18-11:21

But I want you to write down - here's three truths about the miracle of healing.

    11:21-11:23

Now, these aren't the three points on your outline.

    11:24-11:27

These are part of the introduction.

    11:28-11:31

Three truths about the miracle of healing.

    11:32-11:34

    Number one, God still heals.

    11:36-11:40

But there's nothing happening today happened in the first century.

    11:42-11:49

Meaning there's no person today healing in the way that Jesus and the apostles did.

    11:50-11:51

    I must say that again.

    11:51-12:01

There are there's nobody today running around healing people in the way that Jesus and the apostles did.

    12:02-12:02

    Does God still heal?

    12:03-12:04

    Yes, he does.

    12:04-12:07

But there's not a guy walking around that has the gift of healing.

    12:07-12:09

I shared this with you last week.

    12:10-12:13

If there was, why isn't that guy at Children's Hospital?

    12:13-12:14

    Right?

    12:15-12:20

There's nobody healing people in the way that Jesus and the apostles healed people.

    12:21-12:34

And understand that first century - Jesus and the apostles and the miracles, the signs, the healings - there was never anything like that before in history.

    12:35-12:43

And there hasn't ever been anything like that That first century was such a key transition time in history.

    12:44-12:50

God sent His Son, and Jesus died on the cross for my sins, and He rose from the dead to give me eternal life.

    12:50-13:01

And this big transition from the Old Testament law to New Testament living by belief, by faith in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished.

    13:01-13:07

And these apostles were completing God's Word going out and spreading this message.

    13:09-13:14

There's never been a period of history like that - not before, not since.

    13:16-13:26

But, even in the book of Acts, even in the book of Acts, miracles are actually more rare than you think.

    13:27-13:47

I think sometimes we read the Bible and we get this idea that the apostles set the alarm, and they woke up, and time to make the donuts, and they went on this 18-hour healing spree, and go home, take a nap, get back up, do it all over again, and that they were just doing, you know, like thousands of healings a day.

    13:47-13:53

And actually, when you go through the book of Acts, understand, it takes place over a period of about 30 years.

    13:55-13:59

Luke is just giving us the highlights of some of the things that happened.

    14:00-14:02

They're actually more rare than you think.

    14:05-14:16

Also, when you see healings, whether it's from Jesus or in the book of Acts, you're seeing people that are healed from things that are radical in nature.

    14:17-14:17

    Right?

    14:18-14:20

We're talking about people that have never walked.

    14:20-14:21

We're going to talk about somebody like that today.

    14:21-14:23

    People that are blind.

    14:23-14:25

    People that are deaf.

    14:27-14:32

We don't read these stories of people Go up to Jesus and the apostles.

    14:32-14:38

They're like, "Yeah, I need healed. What's the matter?" "I was gardening and I fell and I kind of banged my knee up a little bit.

    14:38-14:41

Could you heal that for me?" We don't see those kinds of things.

    14:41-14:45

The miracles that are recorded in Scripture are radical in nature.

    14:46-14:47

    Radical in nature.

    14:49-14:57

That's why when you see some of these guys on TV going up, "What's the problem?" "Well, I'm having a hard time hearing." And then they snap in their ears and stuff like that.

    14:59-15:02

not making light of hearing problems, I have them myself.

    15:04-15:09

But that's not the kind of thing that you see when God performed these healing miracles in the first century.

    15:10-15:14

So God still heals, but nothing happens today like happened in the first century.

    15:15-15:16

    Number two, God still heals.

    15:19-15:21

This is where it gets really personal, ok?

    15:22-15:23

    God still heals.

    15:26-15:32

If and when He does, it's according to His sovereign purposes.

    15:34-15:39

And sometimes He chooses not to for the same reason.

    15:40-15:41

I want to say that again.

    15:42-15:44

This could be the hardest truth to swallow.

    15:45-15:45

    It is for me.

    15:48-15:49

I want us to be very clear.

    15:51-15:52

    God still heals.

    15:53-15:57

If and when He does, it's according to His sovereign purposes.

    16:00-16:02

And sometimes He chooses not to.

    16:04-16:05

    For the same reason.

    16:06-16:08

God's not a vending machine, okay?

    16:09-16:11

Like, well, okay, God, I need this.

    16:11-16:13

I'm going to put my order in and you better deliver. Okay?

    16:14-16:15

    God's not FedEx.

    16:16-16:17

    God is a person.

    16:18-16:21

And as a person, he's a perfect person.

    16:21-16:23

    And he's a sovereign person.

    16:24-16:25

    What does John Piper says?

    16:25-16:28

At any one moment, God's doing 10,000 things.

    16:29-16:30

And we know like one or two of them.

    16:32-16:43

And as a sovereign person with a perfect plan, God makes decisions on what he's going to do and what he's not going to do.

    16:45-16:49

If and when he does, if and when God heals, it's according to his purposes.

    16:49-16:51

and sometimes he chooses not to heal for the same reason.

    16:53-16:54

See, this is where it gets very personal.

    16:57-17:02

A friend of mine had a family member that got kicked by a horse and killed him.

    17:03-17:04

    Killed the family member.

    17:06-17:10

My son, four years old at the time, was kicked in the face by a horse.

    17:11-17:12

    Aaron prayed over him.

    17:14-17:15

    Not one broken bone.

    17:17-17:18

    Why did this guy die?

    17:20-17:24

And how did my son walk away from that with a cracked tooth?

    17:24-17:24

That was all that he had.

    17:24-17:25

    He had a cracked tooth.

    17:26-17:28

How do you reconcile those things?

    17:30-17:31

I have another friend, his name's Roger.

    17:32-17:34

Hit a deer on his motorcycle.

    17:35-17:36

    Pow! Went flying.

    17:37-17:39

    He skidded like a mile.

    17:40-17:40

    Just...

    17:41-17:42

    He's fine.

    17:43-17:43

    He's fine.

    17:45-17:48

    in God's prayer, he's fine.

    17:49-17:55

I had another friend named Mike, driving home from work on his scooter.

    17:56-17:57

    Hit a deer.

    17:57-17:58

    Head injury.

    17:59-18:00

    Died in a week.

    18:01-18:10

Why is it when we prayed for Roger, Roger's fine, and we prayed for Mike, and he's no longer with us?

    18:12-18:21

I could tell you stories of people have cancer that we prayed over, complete remission.

    18:22-18:35

The doctor says, "Not a trace of cancer in my body." And I can tell you about Erin's grandmother who had cancer, who we prayed for and prayed for and prayed for, and it took her life.

    18:37-19:19

So why does this person, why do we pray for this person and they get healed and we pray for this person and they don't. I don't know the reason. But I do know that God has a reason. God has reasons for doing or not doing something, whether it's healing or or otherwise, and you just have to get to that place where you say, "He is God and I am not." For example, this isn't about healing, but it's the same principle.

    19:20-19:23

We're going to get to Acts chapter 12, Lord willing, eventually.

    19:24-19:29

In Acts chapter 12, Herod arrests James and Peter.

    19:31-19:32

    Two of the apostles.

    19:32-19:33

    Herod arrests them.

    19:34-19:35

    You know this story?

    19:35-19:37

    James is executed.

    19:39-19:40

    What happened to Peter?

    19:41-19:45

The Lord miraculously opened the prison and had him walk out.

    19:47-19:53

The Lord miraculously freed Peter and James was executed.

    19:55-19:55

    Why?

    19:57-20:04

And this is where it gets really hard to swallow when we talk about the truth, that sometimes God chooses to not heal someone.

    20:06-20:09

And we say to ourselves, "Look, I've been there, church.

    20:09-20:10

I'm not like preaching down to you.

    20:11-20:20

This is one of those sermons where I'm kind of like sitting there with you, and I'm like, I have to wrestle with these things too." Why would God choose to not heal someone?

    20:22-20:28

1 Timothy 5.23, Paul tells Timothy to drink some wine for your stomach.

    20:28-20:31

He talked about Timothy had these frequent ailments.

    20:31-20:31

    Frequent.

    20:32-20:34

    Timothy was this sickly guy.

    20:34-20:38

Now, Timothy was Paul's right-hand man, right?

    20:39-20:42

Timothy, that's my boy, this is my ministry partner.

    20:44-20:49

You would think if anybody would be in line for a miracle of healing, it'd be Timothy, right?

    20:50-21:55

This is a young church and he's doing big things and he pals around with them with the big dogs right with the Apostles and Paul didn't say Timothy come and get healed He said Timothy you're gonna have to do some medicinal type things because you're you're a sickly little fellow Why would God Choose to not heal Timothy. I don't know But just because I don't know it doesn't mean that God doesn't have a reason You see this is where it gets even more personal as I shared with you earlier. I've been praying for Owen for 10 years And I don't just mean I don't just mean saying a prayer for Owen I mean fasting And crying out God I just want to have a conversation with my 10 year old God I just like to know one time what he's what he's thinking or or what he's feeling And I'm not the only one that's been praying for this kid.

    21:55-22:01

And why would God choose to not heal him?

    22:02-22:03

    I don't know.

    22:05-22:15

But faith, faith says, "God, I trust you." Not "God, I trust you when you do what I want you to do.

    22:16-22:17

God, I trust you when you perform for me.

    22:18-22:20

God, I trust you when you give me what I want.

    22:20-22:21

    That's not faith.

    22:24-22:25

    Faith says, I.

    22:27-22:28

    I don't know the reason.

    22:31-22:32

    But God must have one.

    22:34-22:36

So God still heals, nothing happened like the first century, right?

    22:37-22:38

    That's apostle era.

    22:40-22:46

God still heals, if and when he does, it's according to his sovereign purposes, and sometimes he chooses not to for the same reason.

    22:46-22:48

Thirdly, this is also part of the introduction.

    22:50-22:51

    God still heals.

    22:52-22:57

Thirdly, listen, God still heals, and it's not wrong to pray for healing.

    22:59-23:02

James 4.2 says you do not have because you do not ask.

    23:02-23:06

How many blessings have we forfeited from God just simply because we haven't asked them?

    23:07-23:07

    We haven't asked them.

    23:09-23:15

James 4.2, is it possible that God's up in heaven saying, I'm ready to do a miracle in your life.

    23:16-23:17

All you need to do is ask me.

    23:18-23:20

    That's how I understand James 4.2.

    23:20-23:21

    Anybody else?

    23:21-23:21

Is that how you're reading that?

    23:21-23:23

You do not have because you do not ask?

    23:25-23:32

God wants to do this awesome thing in your life, but you just simply haven't asked Him for it?

    23:34-23:38

So that tells me, listen, it's not wrong to pray for healing.

    23:39-23:40

I'm not done praying for Owen.

    23:42-23:45

He might not get healed this week or this year.

    23:45-23:49

He might not ever be neurotypical or whatever that is, right?

    23:49-23:51

Normals is setting in the dryer, right, Deb?

    23:52-23:53

    He might not ever be.

    23:55-23:57

That doesn't mean I'm going to stop praying for him.

    23:59-24:10

Because maybe the issue isn't God saying, "I'm not going to do it." Maybe the issue is God saying, "I'm on a timetable here, and this is when it's going to happen.

    24:10-24:11

    I don't know.

    24:12-24:14

But I'm going to keep seeking the Lord for it.

    24:17-24:21

And I would encourage you, church, it's not wrong to pray for healing.

    24:21-24:22

    I'm sharing my story.

    24:22-24:33

You've got a story of maybe somebody in your life that's dealing with a chronic physical problem and you've been praying for that person and praying for that.

    24:33-24:35

Don't give up praying for that person.

    24:38-24:38

    God still heals.

    24:40-24:41

It's not wrong to pray for healing.

    24:41-24:44

It's not wrong to pray persistently for healing.

    24:46-24:47

    Okay?

    24:48-24:52

So let's look at Acts chapter 3 verses 1 through 10.

    24:53-25:00

It says, "Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour." That's 3 p.m.

    25:00-25:02

They started counting their hours from 6 a.m.

    25:03-25:03

    That makes sense to me.

    25:04-25:05

Does that make sense to anybody else?

    25:05-25:06

Like the day starts in the morning, right?

    25:08-25:10

So the ninth hour was 3 p.m.

    25:11-25:21

It says, "And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the beautiful gate." I bet it was pretty.

    25:22-25:31

To ask alms of those entering the temple and seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked, this beggar asked to receive alms.

    25:31-25:33

    Alms are just donations.

    25:33-25:34

    He was panhandling.

    25:36-25:49

And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, "Look at us." That's kind of an intense moment, isn't it?

    25:50-25:55

Here comes like two of the apostles walking into the temple, and they just stop and they stare at the guy.

    25:57-25:59

And it's not even like stopping and staring.

    25:59-26:16

"Look at us!" And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them, Peter said, "I have no silver or gold, but what I do have I give to you." And in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.

    26:16-26:18

And he took Him by the right hand and raised Him up.

    26:19-26:22

And immediately, His feet and ankles were made strong.

    26:23-26:28

And leaping up, He stood and began to walk and entered the temple with them.

    26:28-26:30

Walking and leaping and praising God.

    26:31-26:43

And all the people saw Him walking and praising God and recognized Him as the One who sat at the beautiful gate of the temple asking for alms.

    26:44-26:48

And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what happened to Him.

    26:50-26:54

So, with our introduction, we've acknowledged that God still heals, right?

    26:55-27:00

So we get to a passage like this, and we say, well, I'm not an apostle.

    27:02-27:24

How can I take this portion of the Word of God I want us to look at some of the things that Peter and John did in this passage that we can all do.

    27:25-27:25

    All right?

    27:25-27:28

Number one, I can stop and show compassion.

    27:31-27:32

    God can still heal.

    27:32-27:33

    Here's what I can do.

    27:33-27:34

I can stop and show compassion.

    27:34-27:34

I can stop and show compassion.

    27:34-27:38

I can stop and show compassion Did you see that, Peter and John?

    27:39-27:40

    They actually go way back.

    27:40-27:41

    Did you know that?

    27:41-27:48

In Luke chapter 5 and verse 10, you know that they were fishermen, but did you know that they were actually partners in the fishing business?

    27:49-27:51

So these guys go way back.

    27:53-28:05

Now 3 p.m., the reason that's indicated in here, it's not just an FYI, the reason that the time is indicated, is because this is when the crowds were at their biggest at the temple.

    28:06-28:11

Do you see, he also calls it in v. 1, "at the hour of prayer." The ninth hour.

    28:12-28:16

He's highlighting that because that was when the temple was the most crowded.

    28:18-28:20

    So this man was there.

    28:21-28:23

Your Bible tells you he was lame from birth.

    28:25-28:27

Let's not skim by this too quickly.

    28:29-28:33

And I say, this was his life.

    28:35-28:45

And understand in this day, there were no equal opportunity employers saying, look, if this guy applies for a job, you've got to hire him.

    28:45-28:46

    I don't care if he can't walk.

    28:46-28:48

    Equal opportunity employers.

    28:49-28:50

They didn't have that going on.

    28:52-28:54

    They didn't have motorized wheelchairs.

    28:56-28:59

This man probably didn't have a wife or kids.

    28:59-29:01

I don't know, but my guess is he probably didn't.

    29:02-29:04

If he was lame from birth, how would he support them?

    29:05-29:06

    He obviously couldn't work.

    29:08-29:12

This is the sad thing about this guy's life to this point.

    29:14-29:27

But did you notice it says this man was being carried, and it says, "whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple." What was this guy's life?

    29:28-29:29

    Every day.

    29:30-29:31

Like, hey, what are you doing today?

    29:31-29:37

You might decide I'm going to take a trip, I'm going to go see a movie, I'm going to go play ball, I'm going to go hang out with some friends, whatever.

    29:38-29:39

Every day of this guy's life, what was it?

    29:41-29:46

Some people showed up, and they scooped him up, and they put him in his place.

    29:47-29:47

    Here you go.

    29:48-29:50

We'll be back to pick you up tonight.

    29:52-29:53

Guess what was on his schedule tomorrow?

    29:56-29:57

    Here you go.

    29:57-29:58

    We'll pick you up tonight.

    29:58-30:00

    This was this guy's life.

    30:01-30:02

    Isn't that hard?

    30:03-30:04

    Every day.

    30:05-30:05

    Every day.

    30:07-30:11

He didn't even have the dignity to get to the place to beg by himself.

    30:11-30:13

He had to have people drop him off there every day.

    30:15-30:18

We saw in verses 4 and 5 that contact was made.

    30:20-30:22

is that Peter directed his gaze.

    30:23-30:24

    It's actually the same language.

    30:25-30:31

Remember in Acts 1:10, when Jesus ascended into heaven, it says that the disciples were gazing.

    30:32-30:33

    It's the same word here.

    30:34-30:36

This wasn't like a casual look.

    30:36-30:37

    This was zeroing in.

    30:38-30:40

This was zeroed in on them.

    30:40-30:52

So Peter and John were directing themselves at this man, directing their gazes at this man, and then verse 5 says, and he, the beggar, fixed his attention on them.

    30:52-30:54

    This is really significant. Why?

    30:56-31:09

If you don't know why this is significant, next time you go by someone in the Pittsburgh area that's begging, just stop for a second and watch people.

    31:11-31:17

First of all, watch the people walking by, Because most people walking by aren't even going to look at the beggar.

    31:19-31:20

    Why? You know why.

    31:22-31:23

I'll just kind of pretend he's not there.

    31:24-31:25

    Right?

    31:25-31:30

I've got stuff going on, and if I don't look at him, in my mind, I can kind of pretend he's not there.

    31:30-31:33

Or if I do look at him and he looks at me, oh, you're stuck now.

    31:33-31:41

He's looking at you, and all of a sudden, there's a possibility that you might be moved with pity this guy's looking you in the eye.

    31:43-32:14

thinking about, you know, going to a Penn's game, usually once or twice a year make it to a Penguins game, and I think of the people that are begging as you're walking by. So many people just don't look, just don't look, just don't look, just don't look. Here's something else I've noticed, however. Typically the beggars don't really zone in on people either. Did you ever notice that? I've watched, I'm kind of a Kind of nebby that way, but I've watched beggars that way.

    32:14-32:16

They'll stand there and shake their cup that has coins in it.

    32:16-32:21

And they're not looking at people as they go by, like, "Can I get your attention?" Do you see these beggars?

    32:21-32:27

They're just kind of staring down at the ground, shaking their cup, shaking the cup, shaking the cup, shaking the cup.

    32:28-32:30

They're not zoned in on people either.

    32:32-32:40

become sort of this impersonal way of getting a handout. I'm not going to tell my story.

    32:42-33:06

I'm not going to make human contact. I'm just going to shake the cup. And if people are going to give, they're going to give. And if they're not, they're not. And most people are going to walk by and pretend I'm not even here anyways. So why get emotionally invested in the first place. But you see in this passage, Peter and John, they stopped and zoomed in.

    33:07-33:30

This guy, he zoomed in on them. We get so busy that a lot of times when we're in this situation we don't take time for human contact. Our face is buried in our cell phones. We're We honestly just don't have the time.

    33:32-33:35

I'm not cheering you out, I'm saying it's a reality.

    33:35-33:37

We just don't have the time.

    33:37-33:39

Usually you're on your way somewhere.

    33:39-33:42

I don't have time to stop and invest myself in this person.

    33:43-33:45

    I don't have the 10 or 15 extra minutes.

    33:46-33:51

The game's going to start, or I'm going to be late to work, or my wife's waiting for me, or whatever.

    33:53-33:55

We just don't take the time.

    33:56-33:57

    Peter, he stopped.

    33:57-34:09

John stopped and they didn't think they were too important for this lowly beggar nor did they judge the man for begging. Peter simply cared enough to stop.

    34:11-34:20

I can't heal people. You know something I can do? I can stop and show compassion. I can do that.

    34:22-34:23

    How about you?

    34:24-34:26

Do you know someone who needs compassion?

    34:29-34:32

It doesn't just have to be the beggar on the way to the Penguins game.

    34:33-34:36

It can be that person in your workplace or in your neighborhood.

    34:36-34:43

It can be that single mom that has been struggling and struggling and struggling and just can't seem to get ahead.

    34:43-34:45

Maybe that's the person that needs your compassion.

    34:45-34:46

    Maybe it's that widower.

    34:49-35:20

time you see him he's on the verge of tears. He hasn't been able to get over his loss. Maybe it is someone struggling with illness. I have a medical condition that I can't just take a pill or go get a shot. I hospitalized in constant struggle and I have bad days and I have horrible days. Maybe you know someone who's gone through a recent divorce and yeah I never thought my marriage would I didn't know how to end like this, and now I don't know what to do.

    35:22-35:23

    I'm lost.

    35:24-35:26

Do you know somebody who just needs some compassion?

    35:28-35:37

You see, in all these scenarios, you might not be able to fix the problem, but you can stop and show some compassion.

    35:39-35:42

Secondly, I can minister in the name of Jesus to people.

    35:43-35:45

I can minister in the name of Jesus to people.

    35:46-37:35

that verses 6 & 7 Peter's like up front here like I have no silver and gold I don't think he was lying okay I don't think Peter said that the way that I've said that to be honest I don't have any money to give you which is an honest statement I had money just none to give the person I don't think Peter was saying it like that I just think Peter literally just didn't have any money we saw last week the church was you know selling and giving and trying to take care of the less fortunate and Peter didn't have the money he said but what I do have I give to you this is underlined in my Bible should be underlined in yours in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth Rise up and walk. Pop quiz. Which is easier? Giving money or stopping and getting invested in a person's life? Which is easier? Giving money is easier, right? Giving money might be costlier. Let's be honest, it's far easier to throw dollar at someone than to open yourself up to someone and get involved in their life. Peter here stops and in the name of Jesus, in the name of Jesus, he performed this miracle in the name of Jesus. What do we say? What's that little phrase that we say when we pray? How do we end our prayers? Like amen, I get that. But what do Before we say before, "Amen," we pray these things in Jesus' name, right?

    37:37-37:40

It's according to Jesus' power and authority.

    37:41-37:42

    That's what that means.

    37:43-37:47

Peter had the power to heal in Jesus' name.

    37:47-37:54

You and I might not have that gift, but we do have something very important in common with Peter here.

    37:54-38:30

And that's this, Peter knew that the answer to this man's problem Jesus. And this is true for every single person that you know that needs compassion. The answer to every problem of every person that you meet, the answer always comes back to Jesus. Do you know someone who's depressed? You know the Bible says Jesus himself is joy. Do you know somebody that's stressed? The Bible says Jesus himself is peace.

    38:31-38:33

Do you know somebody that's addicted to something?

    38:34-38:36

The Bible says Jesus himself is freedom.

    38:37-38:39

Do you know someone that's anxious?

    38:40-38:42

The Bible says Jesus himself is hope.

    38:43-38:44

Do you know someone who's lonely?

    38:45-38:47

The Bible says that Jesus himself is love.

    38:50-38:57

And when we talk about receiving the power of the Holy Spirit so that we might be witnesses for Jesus Christ.

    38:58-39:00

We're not trying to sell someone on a religion.

    39:03-39:08

Our goal is to introduce them to Jesus, who loves them and wants to care for them.

    39:11-39:13

Someone sitting here today saying, I do know someone.

    39:15-39:18

Who desperately needs Christ, but I don't know where to start.

    39:21-39:23

Start here, number three, I can bring people to worship.

    39:25-39:26

    Did you notice that?

    39:27-39:29

    Those last three verses.

    39:31-39:32

    Look at verse 8 again.

    39:32-39:46

It says, "And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping, and praising God." First of all, do you notice twice in verse 8, what did it say the man was doing?

    39:47-39:48

    He was leaping.

    39:49-40:17

Honestly, I was trying to imagine what that looked like because the temple would have been crowded, okay? This was peak time, crowds there, and this guy didn't just get up like, "Oh, I'll be darned, they work!" It says twice here, "He was leaping!" Can you imagine that picture? He was leaping! He's running around, jumping all over the place! Imagine what that must have looked like in church. I know it was the temple.

    40:17-40:22

I get that, my theology's alright with that. He's leaping in church, he's and jumping around.

    40:23-40:25

    These things never worked before.

    40:26-40:29

I spent my whole life sitting down and now these things work.

    40:29-40:30

You better believe He was leaping.

    40:32-40:33

It must have been a spectacle.

    40:34-40:36

Peter and John - what do they do?

    40:37-40:38

We'll look again at verse 8.

    40:39-40:43

It says, "This man entered the temple with them." Did you see that?

    40:43-40:48

"Entered the temple with them." Peter and John just took Him along to worship.

    40:49-40:54

This man on this day learned that the temple was more than a great begging spot.

    40:55-40:57

Because he saw the power of God.

    40:59-41:01

Do you know someone who needs to know the Lord?

    41:02-41:04

Who needs to know the power of the Lord?

    41:04-41:14

You know, I was thinking, if only there was a place - like, I have this person that needs to know about the Lord and know the love of the Lord.

    41:15-41:21

If only there was a place where they could be surrounded by people who would love them in the Lord.

    41:21-41:26

And if only there was a place where people were passionately worshiping the Lord.

    41:27-41:30

And if only there was a place where we could love their children.

    41:31-41:36

And if only there was a place where we could have people that would invite them into their homes.

    41:37-41:42

And if only there was a place where people were available to pray with these people.

    41:43-41:45

Oh, we have a place like that.

    41:46-41:47

    It's called church.

    41:48-41:50

Think about that person in your life that needs compassion.

    41:51-41:53

Try to look at it from their perspective.

    41:53-41:58

Imagine you bring them to church, and they walk in the door, and Paul and Carrie love on them.

    41:59-42:03

And then they come in here, and Big D leads them in worship.

    42:05-42:06

Lifting high the name of Jesus.

    42:07-42:12

And then Mandy and her crew are back at Harvest Kids caring for their children.

    42:12-42:14

And Murph is inviting the small group.

    42:14-42:27

Hey, we've got a great small group you should come." And Elisha's up here saying, "Hey, I'd be happy to pray with you." Think of the impact that that's going to have on that person.

    42:29-42:32

Simply because you brought them to church.

    42:34-42:36

And I would say to you, bring them.

    42:36-42:37

    Bring them in.

    42:37-42:42

Let us all as a team love on them and encourage them in the Lord.

    42:47-42:49

Unchurched don't typically just wander in.

    42:50-42:52

There's a very low percentage of chance.

    42:52-42:53

    I didn't research this.

    42:53-42:54

I'm just going to shoot from the hip here.

    42:54-42:58

But imagine there's a pretty low percentage of chance that somebody's going to accidentally stumble into this room.

    43:01-43:15

However, that person in your life that just needs some compassion, that person in your life that needs compassion, and they see the hope in the Lord that you have, and they've They've watched the difference that Jesus Christ has made in your life.

    43:16-43:17

They see the joy of the Lord in you.

    43:18-43:22

They see the stability and the patience and the peace that you have.

    43:23-43:25

They're just waiting for you to invite them.

    43:26-43:29

"Hey, why don't you come to church with me?" They're just waiting.

    43:31-43:35

As I've said before, if the Lord is not at work in this church, you need to tell me.

    43:37-43:40

But if the Lord is at work in this church, then you need to tell others.

    43:41-43:43

This passage talks about an incredible healing.

    43:46-43:49

    Healing - that's God's business.

    43:51-44:01

Compassion, sharing Christ, inviting people to come into this amazing church family - that's your business.

    44:03-44:08

Father in Heaven, we thank You that You are still at work.

    44:11-44:17

We see, we've already seen in this church, Your healing hand on people.

    44:19-44:26

Yet at the same time, Father, we have lifted people before You that for some reason You've chosen not to heal.

    44:26-44:36

And God, I ask for myself and for my brothers and sisters here that when that happens, that You would increase our faith in a special way.

    44:38-44:52

But Father, please don't let it hinder us asking. Don't let it hinder us from trusting and knowing that you are sovereign. You have reasons for things even if we don't understand the reasons for things.

    44:55-45:14

Father, I pray specifically for the people in our circles, the people that we interact with on a regular basis. I'm sure everyone in this room has someone that just so desperately needs compassion, so desperately needs somebody to just and stop and say, "How can I help you?

    45:16-45:17

How can I pray for you?

    45:20-45:25

Why don't you join me at church?" Father, we lift those people up.

    45:26-45:36

It's so easy to focus on myself and to think about my needs and my job and my preferences.

    45:36-45:46

It's so easy for me to focus on myself just not take the time to give to someone who desperately needs it.

    45:48-46:03

Father, this is such a compassionate group of people. I pray that you would continue to stir that in our hearts for your glory and honor. We pray in Jesus name, Amen.

We continue our series through the book of Acts.

    00:05-00:06

    Acts chapter 2.

    00:08-00:10

While you're turning, I've got to tell you this story.

    00:12-00:18

Several months ago, my wife and I were grocery shopping, and we're standing in the grocery store.

    00:18-00:26

I'm standing by the cart, and Aaron went off to get something, so I'm just kind of standing there, and I hear this lady speaking.

    00:26-01:29

just this real little voice, "Help! Can you please help me? Can you please help me?" And I look over and this lady is actually speaking to an employee of the grocery store who has her back turned to the lady and is working on something and is completely ignoring this lady. Just completely ignored. "Can you please help me can you help me can you help me so I walked over and I said can I help you with something ma'am and she said yes I she was real short little lady she said I can't reach that would you get that for me and I reached and I got it for and handed it to her and she goes thank you so much and I stood there and I I I looked at her for a minute and I said, "Is your name Cheryl?" And she said, "Yes." I said, "You were my bus driver when I was in junior high, when I was 13.

    01:29-02:19

You were my bus driver." She looked at me for a minute and she goes, "Mueller? Mueller? Myers?" I said, "No, Miller." She goes, "Oh, Miller! She said, 'You married that mackerel ravi girl, right?'" I said, "Yeah, that's me." She goes, "And you became a minister, right?" I said, "Yeah, that's me! That's me!" And she looked at me, no joke, she looked at me and she goes, "Boy, you put on a lot of weight." I'm like, "Since I was 13?" You know, I'm pretty embarrassed that I let myself go these past 27 years, growing into adulthood.

    02:20-02:52

You know, the shame I feel when I stand in front of my mirror and I no longer have my pre-adolescent body. It's embarrassing. And apparently, apparently the problem is hereditary because my son Cade put on like 77 pounds in the past nine years. Boy, you put on a lot of weight. So of course, first thing I did was tell big brother. I'm like, "Hey Darren, guess what? I ran into Cheryl Brown at the store.

    02:52-02:53

And do you know what she said to me?

    02:53-03:10

She said, "Boy, you put on a lot of weight." And Darren says, "Oh, that's so funny because I ran into the lady that delivered me, you know, when I was born, and she was surprised at how many words I learned since the last time she saw me." So I wasn't offended at all.

    03:11-03:13

And why was I not offended?

    03:14-03:25

Because I've known this woman, and she had a reputation for being sort of the speak your mind kind of person, you know?

    03:25-03:27

And I actually kind of prefer that.

    03:28-03:30

I'd rather not wonder what people are thinking.

    03:30-03:32

I'd rather people just tell me what they're thinking.

    03:32-03:37

But she had that reputation for being that kind of person.

    03:37-03:40

So when she says something like that, you can't be offended.

    03:40-03:45

You knew she was going to say something that would end up as a sermon illustration.

    03:46-03:49

So you can't be offended because she had the reputation.

    03:49-03:57

And this morning, we're going to talk about reputation because reputation is everything.

    03:59-04:06

Reputation is everything because for good or for the bad, you have a reputation.

    04:08-04:10

And think of the weight that your reputation carries.

    04:10-04:13

You know, Pittsburgh sports, Pittsburgh sports fans.

    04:15-04:17

Think of when Michael Vick was signed by the Steelers.

    04:17-04:19

You remember the controversy around that?

    04:19-04:26

And there were people lined up to get their Steeler tattoos removed, and I'm not here to make a comment on that either way.

    04:26-04:28

I'm just saying, do you remember the controversy?

    04:29-04:32

Here's a man who did some horrible things, and I'm a dog lover.

    04:33-04:34

    I am a dog lover.

    04:35-04:37

He did some horrible things, right?

    04:38-04:55

And he's apologized, and he's tried to make restitution through some charity work, and he says he's kind of done with that, and he paid his debt to society and all of that, but there are still people that say, "Somebody like that should not be a professional athlete.

    04:56-05:05

Somebody like that should not be wearing the black and gold." His reputation, no matter what he tried to do to undo this reputation that he had, he still carried with him, what?

    05:06-05:07

    The reputation.

    05:09-05:13

And today I want to talk specifically about the reputation of the church.

    05:14-05:25

You know, with this portion of Acts, we have already seen that Jesus Christ promised that the church would receive power when the Holy Spirit comes.

    05:26-05:29

Why would God want us to have His power?

    05:29-05:37

Well Jesus said, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes, and you will be my witnesses." That sounds like a reputation thing, doesn't it?

    05:38-06:12

giving us his power because he wants us to be not witnesses for ourselves, not witnesses for the kind of person that you are, the kind of person that I am, or the kind of people that Pittsburgh people are. It's witnesses for the reputation of the Lord. Well we've seen in Acts already that the Holy Spirit has come and Peter preached, we talked about that, and 3,000 people got saved. And in In the passage we're going to look at today, we see the reputation that the early church earned.

    06:13-06:20

And as a pastor, and as church members, we should care about the reputation of this church.

    06:23-06:25

Are we known for the right things, for the right reasons?

    06:26-06:30

So what we're going to look at today, going through this text, simply this.

    06:30-06:34

What is said about a church that has a godly reputation?

    06:35-06:36

So do you have your outline?

    06:36-06:39

Five things said of a church with a godly reputation.

    06:40-06:45

In other words, these are the kind of things I would like said about our church.

    06:46-06:52

And if we're going to have this kind of reputation, this shows us the kind of church that we need to be.

    06:52-06:55

But number one, five things said of a church with a godly reputation.

    06:55-06:57

Number one, that church is unified.

    06:58-06:59

    That church is unified.

    07:01-07:01

    Look at verse 42.

    07:03-07:15

It says, "And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers." They devoted themselves.

    07:16-07:16

    Did you see that?

    07:18-07:19

    They weren't church attenders.

    07:21-07:23

    They weren't CEO Christians.

    07:23-07:25

You know what a CEO Christian is?

    07:26-07:27

    Christmas and Easter only.

    07:29-07:30

What kind of Christians were they?

    07:32-07:34

    It says they devoted themselves.

    07:36-07:41

The church is made up of committed people, and we live in a day of non-commitment.

    07:42-07:44

Marriage, your marriage isn't working out, just bail.

    07:45-07:50

Work, you don't love your job 100% every day, just quit.

    07:53-07:57

Friendships, you know your bus driver tells you you're fat, you don't go to talk to her.

    07:59-10:12

it's also true with the church. It's easy. I don't like what somebody said to me, or I didn't agree with how I understood one thing said in the church, and there's lots of great churches in the area. And I think that's one advantage that the early church had. They devoted themselves. They were committed people. What were they committed to? Well, we don't have to wonder what they were committed to. Did you see the list in the text? Did you see it? Quickly, what were they committed to? Apostles teaching. For us that is the Bible. Understand that the New Testament was being written with these events, okay? They didn't have the luxury at this time of saying open up your New Testaments. They were writing the New Testaments because they were apostles with apostolic authority but for us you see we have the Bible that's unity and beliefs unity and beliefs that church is unified unified how unity and beliefs you see we have this we have this objective standard that listen it doesn't really matter what I think or what I believe it doesn't matter what I I think or what I believe and it doesn't matter what you think What matters is what God thinks and if we're going to be unified we better get on the same page With what God thinks and we don't have to wonder what God thinks because he wrote it all down for us And that's why church our unity has to be in God's Word Our unity can't be in Style of worship or style of fellowship or any of these external things our unity has to be found in the objective Source, it's God's Word. This is the thing that we rally around to say it doesn't matter what we think it matters What God thinks that's why you know, whether it's me or one of the elders or we bring in another preacher Every time it better be somebody the first thing out of their mouth better be open your Bibles Okay unity in beliefs secondly do you see the fellowship?

    10:14-10:57

That's unity to what I call the team You see fellowship is not just potluck dinners And I know every time we have a picnic or something everybody's like Jeff hates potlucks And I do but I I want to I want to clarify something Please understand. Please hear my heart on this If I know where the food came from I'm okay Right like small group at Murphy's house, right? I eat there Because I know where the food came from. I can't eat if I don't know where it came from Okay, so I don't hate potlucks. I just need to know where the food came from So maybe a sign or a label, you know Would it really kill you to write your name on the pan?

    10:59-12:17

Sorry, that wasn't in my notes But fellowship is more than the potluck fellowship is more than rally around the donut box Fellowship has this idea of we're on the same team. We're wearing the same jersey Okay, that's what fellowship is. It's not doing events together. It's doing life together, you know Hebrews 1024 actually Tells us don't don't forsake assembling together It's just real easy to say, you know what? I work hard all week. I want to sleep in on Sunday and I get that I Get that but you know the Bible says this this time a fellowship is so important where we're encouraging each other and loving each other and lifting each other up and They were they were unified they were unified to the team because they were unified through the fellowship Thirdly, it's right there in the text. You see it the breaking of bread Now the context here is spiritual life in the church everything in this verse is spiritual life in the church So what he's talking about here when he talks about breaking of bread, he's talking about the Lord's Supper in other words unity in Christ So if unity and beliefs unity to the team unity in Christ and that's common ground That's common ground, right?

    12:19-12:29

see, that's But puts us all in the same playing field doesn't it Levi you were you were saved by the grace of God in Jesus Christ, right?

    12:29-12:32

Ben you were saved by the grace of God in Jesus Christ, right?

    12:33-13:29

And Ken you were saved by the grace of God in Jesus Christ. You see the common ground here There's none of us that walk in here that you know have more stripes on our uniform Have more have more kudos and accolades over anyone else because we're all just a bunch of broken people that have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ and You see when we take the Lord's Supper together. That's our reminder look We're all just broken people desperately in need of God's grace and eternally thankful for what he's done in Jesus Christ It's unity in Christ The fourth thing it says unity I'm sorry, they were devoted to the prayers and Here obviously the context is corporate prayer prayer corporate prayer That's why this early church saw so much power Whether it's praying here praying in our small groups having our prayer meetings or prayer services With prayer you could say it's unity and purpose.

    13:30-13:34

Unity and purpose. That's what happens in the church when we pray together.

    13:34-13:36

It's saying that we have a common purpose.

    13:38-13:41

And we're together seeking God for that purpose.

    13:43-13:46

I try not to do a lot of cross-referencing, but you've got to write this verse down.

    13:47-13:48

    Matthew 18, 19.

    13:49-14:02

Jesus said, "Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, It will be done for them by my Father in heaven." And I can't even begin to understand everything that verse means.

    14:02-14:07

But I can tell you this, there's some kind of power in corporate prayer.

    14:08-14:16

When God's people come together in unity and cry out to the Lord for the same thing, there's some kind of power there.

    14:17-14:21

And it's an incredible invitation and opportunity to pray.

    14:22-14:25

So the early church, first of all, was unified.

    14:26-14:30

They were unified because they were devoted.

    14:32-14:33

    They were devoted.

    14:34-14:37

They were people that were committed to each other and to the mission.

    14:37-14:39

And Harvest Bible Chapel, can you say that?

    14:40-14:47

Can you say that you are committed to the mission of this church and to the people of this church?

    14:47-14:48

    Can you say that?

    14:49-14:52

You know what? Where two or more are gathered, you're going to have conflict.

    14:53-15:02

But being devoted to one another also means, "Look, rough times are going to come, but we're going to work through it, okay?" The Bible gives clear guidelines on how to work through some things.

    15:02-15:04

And we're going to have issues come up.

    15:04-15:07

We have had and we're going to continue to, so long as we meet.

    15:08-15:09

But we are devoted to one another.

    15:11-15:14

The mission and the people are more important than the conflict.

    15:15-15:15

    Okay?

    15:16-15:21

So, "Five things said of a church with a godly reputation." Here's something I would like people to say about Harvest Bible Chapel.

    15:21-15:22

    That church is unified.

    15:24-15:26

You know, those people all seem to be on the same page.

    15:27-15:29

Secondly, God is doing things in that church.

    15:31-15:33

God is doing things in that church.

    15:33-15:34

    Look at verse 43.

    15:34-15:53

It says, "And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles." We've already talked about this, but just to review, God performed signs and wonders through the apostles to authenticate the message.

    15:54-16:03

And the miracles stopped after the Bible was completed, because we don't have need for confirming signs, we have the Bible.

    16:03-16:07

Now please hear me, because somebody is going to mishear this.

    16:09-16:14

I do believe that God is still at work, and I do believe that God still performs miracles.

    16:14-16:17

I have seen them. I have seen so many.

    16:17-16:22

I could tell you stories that would keep you here till the Super Bowl about miracles that I've witnessed the Lord perform.

    16:24-16:30

With that said, I do not believe that there are apostles walking the earth today that have healing powers.

    16:31-16:42

Despite what you see these guys on TV looking like they're doing, there aren't people that walk around that have healing power that just touch people and heal them.

    16:43-16:46

If there are, my question would be, why don't they go to children's hospital?

    16:47-16:51

Huh? Why don't you walk up and down the ward at children's hospital and touch those kids?

    16:51-16:52

    If you have that power.

    16:54-17:08

God does do miracles and God does heal and God is still at work, but I don't believe God's at work through people, through the apostles, the way that he was when he was using these apostles to confirm the message that he was speaking through them.

    17:08-17:12

This was a huge transition period in history.

    17:12-17:18

So the Lord had to perform these miracles through the apostles to authenticate the message.

    17:18-17:19

    Does that make sense?

    17:20-17:21

Is everybody with me on that?

    17:23-17:33

What you have to see is today, God is still at work in every decision to repent.

    17:35-17:38

Every decision to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

    17:38-17:43

every baptism, every miraculous provision, every mission opportunity.

    17:43-17:45

God is still at work in this church.

    17:47-17:53

And if this were a place where everything is easily explained by our resources, then we're in big trouble.

    17:54-18:16

We are in big trouble if somebody can step back and say, "I can see how they get stuff done at that church." If there's not some supernatural component to this church, If there's not some disproportionate fruit and work that's happening that can only be explained by God showing up and being at work in our midst, then we have a real problem.

    18:17-18:20

We have a real problem if we can do church without God.

    18:20-18:29

You see, the people in this day, they weren't awed by the church, even though that was kind of an awe-inspiring thing.

    18:29-18:31

Three thousand people made a decision in one day.

    18:31-18:36

That's pretty awe-inspiring, but that wasn't the thing that awed them.

    18:37-18:39

They were awed by the presence of God.

    18:40-18:45

At Harvest Bible Chapel, this should be a place where unexplainable things happen.

    18:47-18:53

We have seen it, and we have to continue to seek the Lord for big things.

    18:54-18:55

Are you willing to pray for big things?

    18:56-18:58

Are you willing to trust God for big things?

    18:59-19:01

See, I believe that God has the power.

    19:02-19:10

I believe that God can and God will and God wants to do big things in your life and do big things through this church.

    19:10-19:11

    Do you believe that?

    19:12-19:16

If you believe that, are you willing to pray like you believe that?

    19:17-19:22

Are you willing to say, "God, I know you have the power.

    19:23-19:27

God, I know what you want done." Are you willing to pray for that?

    19:28-19:31

That's the sort of reputation I want for this church.

    19:31-19:36

The same reputation that this first church had, where people are saying God is doing things in that church.

    19:37-19:41

Thirdly, five things said of a church with a godly reputation.

    19:42-19:44

    Thirdly, that church is generous.

    19:45-19:46

    That church is generous.

    19:46-19:47

    Look at verse 44.

    19:47-20:24

It says, "And all who believed were together," there it is again, were together and had all things in common when it says that they had all things in common that didn't mean like interests and hobbies right that's not what that meant they had all things in common like here at harvest Bible Chapel you have to be a Steelers fan to attend is there anybody here that is not a Steelers fan anyone dismissed you see that's not the point that does that's That's not what it means they had all things in common.

    20:26-20:30

What it meant was there's this sense of, there's a sense of what's mine is yours.

    20:31-20:32

    That's what it is.

    20:33-20:36

In other words, these people were fridge friends.

    20:37-20:38

You know what a fridge friend is?

    20:39-20:40

You know what a fridge friend is?

    20:42-20:44

How many people know what a fridge friend is?

    20:44-20:45

    Some of you do.

    20:46-20:47

I'm going to tell you what a fridge friend is.

    20:48-20:55

A fridge friend is somebody that's over at your house and your relationship is so comfortable They help themselves to whatever's in your refrigerator.

    20:56-20:58

How many people here have a fridge friend?

    21:00-21:02

How many people here think that they are a fridge friend?

    21:04-21:07

I'll be honest with you, I know there's some people in this room that can testify.

    21:08-21:12

You know, Murphys, Mowers, I mean, I've done it at your house.

    21:13-21:15

I just help myself to whatever's in your fridge.

    21:15-21:15

    Why?

    21:15-21:16

    Because we're fridge friends.

    21:16-21:19

Because we have all things in common, that's what that means.

    21:19-21:20

    What's yours is mine.

    21:21-21:27

And guess what? If you're at my house, you're welcome to whatever's in the fridge or any of the cupboards.

    21:28-21:30

Because we have all things in common. You see?

    21:31-21:32

    That's what that means.

    21:34-21:38

And you're like, "Well, what if somebody has a need and I can't meet the need?" Well, look at verse 45.

    21:39-21:49

It says, "And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need." Well, what if I can't meet the need? Well, we'll find a way to meet the need.

    21:50-21:53

You see what the early church did? That's how generous they were.

    21:53-22:05

Like, look, there's some people here that have needs, and you know what? I don't need all this extra stuff to live, so I'm going to sell it, and I'm going to be generous, and I'm going to take care of the people that have need.

    22:07-22:12

Let's be honest, when we talk about money in the church, let's be honest.

    22:13-23:13

When we talk about money in the church, does the church typically have a reputation to the world of being greedy, being generous which one greedy right typically to the world the church is greedy do you know many times I've heard people say all the church wants is money all the church wants the church has that reputation but instead the church should have a reputation not of being greedy but of being generous the church should have a rep for being generous and I want you to notice this this generosity should start with each other. Catch this. When we talk about generosity we can think about raising money to repair the pastor's house in Moldova. That was fantastic. You remember that? That was fantastic. You know, generosity to buy materials for the Romanian training center, generosity to send a team of people from our church over to help with the construction project, generosity.

    23:14-24:12

Those things are all great, but you have to see in this passage the church wasn't for being generous outside their walls they were first known for being generous with one another did you see that they were first known for being generous with one another and I'm not saying we shouldn't be doing the mission thing we should be seeking the Lord to increase our capacity to do more of those mission things but there's a problem with the church if we're so concerned about being generous to the people outside that we're neglecting the needs of the people inside the church. The early church got that. You see that in the text? Everybody see that? They were taking care of each other and that's where it has to start. Taking care of each other, being a generous church. That's what I'd like people to say about Harvest Bible Chapel. That church is generous.

    24:13-24:16

    Fourthly, that church is joyful.

    24:17-24:18

    Look at verse 46.

    24:18-24:19

    That church is joyful.

    24:20-24:30

Says in day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts.

    24:31-24:32

    Glad and generous hearts.

    24:32-24:33

    We already talked about generous.

    24:34-24:35

    Let's talk about glad.

    24:36-24:38

Says they went to the temple together.

    24:39-24:40

    That's corporate worship.

    24:40-25:41

was church before church buildings and they met in homes that's like our small groups that's why we do what we do at harvest Bible Chapel we meet together this is like temple time and then in each other's homes that's our small group time but notice it says their hearts were glad so let me ask you is this church a joy for you is it a joy for you to come to church Do you love the people at this church? You're like, "Man, I can't wait to get to church. I can't wait to be with the people and to worship together." Is church a joy for you? Like, "Well, I'm not sure." Well, here's how you can find out real quick. I want you to make two lists. You don't have to do it right now, but make two lists. I want you to write down five things you love about Harvest Bible Chapel. I want you to write down five things you don't like about Harvest Bible Chapel. Which of those lists is easier for you to make?

    25:42-26:07

Which of those lists do you complete faster, things that you love about the church or things that you don't like about the church? That'll kind of show you what your attitude in general is towards the church. Notice in the first part of verse 47, it says they were praising God. You see, that's how this joy thing works. It comes from God and it goes back to God.

    26:09-26:10

    It shows up in worship.

    26:11-26:23

That's how I see joy in the church when we're worshiping and I turn around and I see people lifting up their voices, worshiping God in spirit and truth with hands raised and adoring Jesus Christ.

    26:24-26:26

That's how I see joy in this church.

    26:27-26:36

I see joy in this church when, you know, the custodians are kicking us out because people want to stay and talk and hang out and catch up with each other.

    26:36-26:51

I see joy in the church when it's like, "Hey, let's go to lunch together after church because they kicked us out of the school." Okay? Signs of a joyful church culminating in worship. A church is joyful. I'll tell you, that's something I'd like said about Harvest Bible Chapel.

    26:52-27:00

Is that true? Then finally, finally, I can't say anything bad about that church.

    27:01-27:04

Look at verse 47 again. It says they were praising God.

    27:04-27:12

Look at this next phrase, "And having favor with all the people." Having favor with all the people.

    27:13-27:19

There is offense in the gospel, true or false.

    27:20-27:21

    There's offense in the gospel.

    27:22-27:28

Because to preach the gospel you have to say, listen, you're a fallen sinner and you're heading for God's judgment.

    27:30-27:33

You're wicked to the core and you need a savior.

    27:33-27:33

    That's offensive.

    27:34-27:37

It's true, but it's an offensive message.

    27:37-27:43

And even though sharing the gospel message brings an offense, understand the distinction.

    27:43-27:46

We should not be offensive people.

    27:47-27:48

    You see the difference?

    27:50-27:52

We should not be offensive people.

    27:53-28:01

We can share the gospel message and let the offense rest in the gospel, but we should not be offensive people.

    28:01-28:05

That's why it says here that they had favor with all the people.

    28:06-28:09

Another New Testament term for having favor with people.

    28:11-28:14

This will help us all to understand this a little better.

    28:14-28:16

The New Testament talks about being blameless.

    28:17-28:25

It talks about being blameless, meaning if somebody wants to say something bad about you, what would they come up with?

    28:27-28:31

A blameless person, somebody who tries to live, here's another term, above reproach.

    28:32-28:37

Somebody that tries to live a blameless life, lives in such a way that nobody has anything bad to say about.

    28:38-28:39

    Meaning what? Meaning your conduct.

    28:41-28:43

You're honest at work. You put in a full work day.

    28:46-28:52

You have integrity in your home. You're the same person at home that you are in church, that you are in the workplace, that you are with your buddies.

    28:53-28:55

    That's integrity. Blameless.

    28:56-28:58

    Blameless in your speech.

    28:59-29:05

You don't speak one way in church and another way in social media, or another way with your buddies.

    29:07-29:08

    Blameless in speech.

    29:09-29:10

    Blameless in your attitudes.

    29:13-29:14

    That you're not a complainer.

    29:15-29:17

    Blameless in compassion.

    29:19-29:31

See, this morning as we talk about the reputation of the church, The reputation of the church is really about the reputation of the people, right?

    29:32-29:35

We don't even have a church building, we rent this space.

    29:35-29:42

So the reputation of this church isn't about the reputation of the building, it's about the reputation of the people.

    29:42-29:45

But let's zoom in a little closer.

    29:45-29:52

The reputation of the church really zeroes in to the reputation of you, right?

    29:54-30:08

Look at this last phrase. It says, "And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved." Just to remind you that none of these things are things that we manufacture.

    30:08-30:11

Here you see God's sovereignty at work.

    30:12-30:15

Who was doing the adding? Who was bringing people to the church?

    30:16-30:18

Who was growing the church? The Bible is crystal clear.

    30:19-30:22

The Lord added to the number.

    30:23-30:26

Day by day, those who were being saved.

    30:27-30:29

So God's sovereignty at work through all this.

    30:30-30:35

A healthy church has natural evangelism.

    30:37-30:42

So when we talk about the church growing, do I want this church to grow?

    30:42-30:43

    I absolutely do.

    30:44-30:45

    Why?

    30:46-30:48

Why do I want this church to grow?

    30:50-30:53

There's really three reasons that I'd like to share with you.

    30:53-30:55

Here's why I want this church to grow.

    30:55-30:58

Number one, is growth is a sign of health.

    30:59-31:00

Growth is a sign of health.

    31:02-31:10

Number two, as we grow, so will our capacity to serve Christ and our influence in this community.

    31:12-31:19

But the main reason, the number one reason I want this church to grow, is because the more this church grows, the more glory God gets.

    31:20-31:31

The more people come in here to lift up their voices and raise their hands and sing unashamed adoration of Jesus Christ, the more glory God gets.

    31:31-31:32

That's why I want this church to grow.

    31:34-31:45

As I was preparing this message, I was thinking, what would be a great way that we can immediately apply some of these things that are in this passage?

    31:45-31:49

And I thought, you know, why don't we pray about this right now?

    31:50-31:51

Can you do that with me?

    31:51-31:58

Can we pray as a church and our reputation, can we pray that this is a church that is unified?

    32:00-32:04

Can we pray that this is a church where God is at work?

    32:05-32:09

Can we pray that this is a church where the people are generous with one another?

    32:10-32:14

Can we pray that this it a church that is joyful?

    32:16-32:21

Can we pray that this is a church that is blameless?

    32:23-32:26

And can we pray that this is a church that the Lord will grow?

    32:28-32:30

You bow your heads with me as our worship team makes their way forward.

    32:32-32:35

You want to join hands to the person next to you as a sign of unity?

    32:36-32:37

    I think that's a beautiful thing.

    32:38-32:48

If you want to just reach across and hold hands as a sign of saying, "We are unified in this prayer because we aren't committed at Harvest Bible Chapel to putting on a show.

    32:50-32:56

We are committed at Harvest Bible Chapel to the glory of God and Jesus Christ.

    32:58-33:04

Father, as we come before you in prayer, I thank you for this church.

    33:06-33:07

    I thank you, Father.

    33:08-33:14

For the miracles that you have been performing through this church, I thank you, Father, that this is a church where you are at work.

    33:15-33:19

And I pray, Father, as we move forward, we would be a church that's unified.

    33:21-33:35

And the things that you've called us to be unified about, your word and our fellowship and the Lord's table coming together in Christ and praying with one another, let us be unified.

    33:37-33:41

Father, we have seen a disproportionate amount of generosity in this church.

    33:42-33:46

people taking care of one another with material needs.

    33:46-33:52

We've seen generosity, certainly outside this church, with mission work as well.

    33:53-33:58

Father, I pray that you would always stir in our hearts a spirit of generosity.

    34:00-34:02

Father, I pray that this would be a joyful church.

    34:03-34:07

Just like these first century Christians, your word says that their hearts were glad.

    34:08-34:11

    The church wasn't a pain.

    34:12-34:14

And I can't stand those people.

    34:15-34:18

They were people who loved one another.

    34:19-34:23

And enjoyed coming into your presence with one another.

    34:23-34:25

Let us be a joyful church.

    34:26-34:29

And Father, I pray that we would be a blameless church.

    34:29-34:31

Yes, there is offense in the gospel.

    34:31-34:32

    It's a stumbling block.

    34:33-34:40

And there are people that hate us for no other reason than the fact that we love Jesus Christ.

    34:41-34:52

But Father, concerning our conduct towards the outside world, the kind of people that we are in our homes and in our workplaces, and the way we speak, let us be blameless people.

    34:53-34:57

    Father, we pray for growth.

    34:58-35:01

We have certainly seen growth already.

    35:03-35:04

    Father, we pray for more.

    35:05-35:09

We pray for more spiritual growth, more maturity in Christ.

    35:09-35:11

And Father, I pray for more numerical growth.

    35:13-35:15

Not to draw attention to ourselves.

    35:17-35:24

Your word says with this early church that you were adding to their number day by day, those who were being saved.

    35:24-35:25

That's what I pray for, for this church.

    35:26-35:41

that more people would come and experience your presence and marvel in your glory and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and that you would add to this church people who are being saved.

    35:44-35:52

Father, grow this church so that our capacity to serve you would increase and our influence in this community would increase.

    35:53-36:04

Grow this church so that your name is glorified more and more and more and more as so many more people come to adore you.

    36:06-36:10

Father, we thank you for everything that you have done.

    36:11-36:17

And by faith, we're seeking you for more, for your glory.

    36:18-36:19

    For your glory.

    36:20-36:21

    For your glory, Father.

    36:22-36:25

We pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

  • 00:00-00:04

Open up your Bibles with me to the book of Acts.

    00:06-00:08

    We're continuing our sermon series.

    00:10-00:17

And everything that we're doing this year really hangs on one verse, and it's Acts chapter 1 and verse 8.

    00:18-01:03

When Jesus made this glorious promise to his disciples, by extension to his church, that Jesus said, "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes. Power for what? Jesus said you'll be my witnesses in Jerusalem and Judea and Samaria even to the ends of the earth and that promise to the disciples is the same promise that we live by today that we are to be people that live in the power of the Holy Spirit we're not trying to do this church thing in our own power, our own creativity. It's by the power of the Holy Spirit. And you see it also defines our mission for us too, doesn't it?

    01:04-01:25

We receive power. Why? So that we have some cushy life? No, that we receive the power because Jesus Christ wants us to be his witnesses in Jerusalem, meaning your own backyard, in your workplace, in your family. You should be a witness to In Judea and Samaria, those are the surrounding areas.

    01:25-01:28

That's where our small groups are involved in outreach.

    01:29-01:34

We want every small group involved in getting out into the community to be a witness for the love of Christ.

    01:35-01:37

And then he said to the ends of the earth.

    01:37-01:39

That's why we sent a group to Romania in August.

    01:39-01:42

That's why I went to Thailand a couple of weeks ago.

    01:43-01:45

The mission goes to the ends of the earth.

    01:48-01:56

we are in the book of Acts, we recall the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost just as Jesus promised He would come.

    01:56-02:05

And the Bible says there was a sound of mighty rushing wind and all of these people that were in town for the feast heard the wind.

    02:07-02:13

They came out and they heard the disciples all preaching in different languages.

    02:15-02:35

And the people said, "What's going on here?" And other people said, "Oh, they're just drunk." And when we get to Acts chapter 2, we've been going through this sermon that Peter gives where he explains what this means that the Holy Spirit has come.

    02:36-02:41

Remember, first of all, Peter said that this was prophesied in Joel.

    02:41-02:49

He's like, "This isn't news." Like clear back in the prophet Joel, promised that he would pour out his spirit on his people.

    02:50-02:55

And then Peter says, and everyone, this is from Joel, so everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

    02:56-02:57

    Well, how does that happen?

    02:58-02:59

Well, that's what we talked about last week.

    03:00-03:01

    It's Jesus.

    03:02-03:05

Peter says, let me tell you about Jesus Christ.

    03:07-03:08

    What about Jesus?

    03:09-03:16

Peter says he is the Messiah and he proved it in his life and in his death, in his resurrection, and his exaltation.

    03:18-03:31

Peter says, "Jesus proved that he was the Christ." And then at the end of verse 36, where we left off last week, Peter's like, "And by the way, you killed him.

    03:32-03:41

You crucified him. You Israelites that have been waiting for generations for your Messiah to come.

    03:41-03:42

    Your Messiah has come.

    03:43-03:45

He's obviously, Jesus Christ is obviously the Messiah.

    03:45-03:46

And what did you do to him?

    03:47-03:48

You took him and you crucified him.

    03:49-03:51

    Look at verse 37.

    03:52-04:07

It says, "Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, 'Brothers, what shall we do?'" See, Peter says, "He is the Messiah.

    04:07-04:14

And you killed him." And at this point you see the people that Peter was preaching to, the lights came on.

    04:15-04:24

And they said, "He is, Jesus is the Messiah. He is." And we killed Him.

    04:26-04:32

We were standing in the crowd screaming for Him to be crucified.

    04:34-04:35

    What have we done?

    04:38-04:48

They asked, "Brothers, what shall we do?" This is the question that's going to come up a few times in the book of Acts.

    04:50-04:51

    "What do we do?

    04:51-05:02

What do we do about this?" Other times it's phrased this way, "What must I do to be saved?" That's really the question that matters at the end of the day, at the end of your life.

    05:07-05:09

What matters is how you've answered that question.

    05:11-05:16

Before we look at the right answer, I want to remind you of some wrong ways that people answer this question.

    05:17-05:19

What must I do to be saved?

    05:19-05:21

Some people answer the question this way.

    05:21-05:24

They say, "If you want to be saved, you've got to keep the rules." You know the rules, right?

    05:25-05:32

You've got to make sure you tie, make sure you go to church, make sure you keep the Sabbath, and we have our rules, and we don't dance, and we don't play cards.

    05:35-05:36

    And that's called legalism.

    05:38-05:44

And there is no amount of keeping a list of rules that's going to make you not guilty of sin.

    05:46-05:49

Well, for some people, how do you get saved?

    05:50-05:55

Some people say, "You just do good to other people." These are moralists.

    05:56-05:58

"Just do good to other people.

    05:58-06:08

you know, work at the soup kitchen and help little old ladies across the street and make sure you put money in the, you know, the Salvation Army drum with the bell ringer there.

    06:08-06:10

    Do those kinds of things.

    06:11-06:12

    That's how you get saved.

    06:12-06:22

And the question that I have to ask is how much good is required to take place in your life to make God ignore the bad?

    06:23-06:25

That concept is nowhere in the Bible.

    06:26-06:28

do enough good and God forgets about the bad.

    06:29-06:30

    Still guilty of sin.

    06:32-06:33

What must we do to be saved?

    06:34-06:37

For some people, they trust their heritage.

    06:38-06:39

    I was born into it.

    06:41-06:48

Church, it doesn't matter how good of a Christian your mother or your grandmother was, salvation isn't like hair color or height.

    06:50-06:54

Your walk with Christ is about your walk with Christ.

    06:56-07:04

Someday when you stand before the Lord, Grandma's not going to be standing beside you giving the Lord a sales pitch why he should let you into Heaven.

    07:04-07:05

    It doesn't work that way.

    07:06-07:14

This would have been important for the Jews to understand because the belief was, "Well, as long as you're Jewish, you're saved." It doesn't work that way.

    07:16-07:17

Well, there are some that are universalists.

    07:18-07:29

They say, "Well, everyone gets in Heaven anyways, right?" It's taken a swing in evangelicalism, where people more and more are even denying the existence of hell.

    07:30-07:38

That hell has been sort of redefined as this boogeyman that Christians have used throughout the centuries, scare tactics.

    07:39-07:55

And my response to that is just, "Hey, read the Bible for yourself." But this idea that everybody gets into heaven and there's no condemnation or judgment for people that reject Christ, just read the words of Jesus Christ himself.

    07:55-07:58

He talked about hell twice as much as he talked about heaven.

    08:01-08:05

So the idea that everybody just gets in anyways, that doesn't fly in the face of Scripture.

    08:07-08:08

What must we do to be saved?

    08:08-08:09

    Then you have the ritualists.

    08:09-08:11

You know, you've got to go through the holy sacraments.

    08:13-08:24

Well, concerning the sacraments, there are really only two that are described in the The Bible and neither of them bestow any spiritual power on the person doing them.

    08:27-08:28

So all of these are incorrect.

    08:30-08:32

Somebody here might say, "Well, what makes you think you know the right answer?

    08:32-08:39

If all these people are wrong, why do you think you know the right answer on what must a person do to be saved?" The Bible.

    08:39-08:40

    That's how I know.

    08:41-08:42

Or the Bible tells me so.

    08:42-08:43

    Remember that song?

    08:46-08:52

Salvation is purely by faith in who Jesus Christ is and what he accomplished for you.

    08:52-08:53

I want you to jot these two references down.

    08:54-08:58

I could give you references until Christmas and I really just wanted to limit it to a couple.

    08:59-09:07

Romans chapter 4 verses 4 through 5 say, "Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.

    09:09-09:18

To the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly," listen His faith is counted as righteousness.

    09:20-09:24

The only way that you can have right standing before God is by faith.

    09:25-09:28

It's by trusting in what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ.

    09:31-09:32

His faith is counted as righteousness.

    09:34-09:36

Here's another one of my favorites.

    09:37-09:39

Galatians chapter 2 and verse 16.

    09:41-09:42

    I love this verse.

    09:42-09:47

sometimes people say, "Preachers are repetitive, preachers are repetitive." Did you ever notice how preachers are repetitive? Did I mention that?

    09:47-09:48

    That preachers are repetitive?

    09:49-09:54

Check this out. In Galatians 2.16, Paul says the exact same thing three times in one verse.

    09:56-10:16

Just in case you missed it, he says, "Yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law, but through faith in Jesus Christ." So we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law.

    10:19-10:20

What are you trying to say, Paul?

    10:21-10:21

    Here it is again.

    10:22-10:25

Because by works of the law, no one will be justified.

    10:27-10:30

You can't do anything to get saved.

    10:32-10:35

purely by your faith in Jesus Christ.

    10:37-10:49

However, there is real evidence when someone really comes to faith, and that's what we're going to look at in our passage today, just five verses.

    10:50-10:55

Salvation is purely by faith, but there is real evidence when someone really comes to faith.

    10:56-11:00

line, we're going to look at five ingredients of true conversion.

    11:02-11:05

Okay, these are five ingredients of true conversion.

    11:05-11:06

    This is self-examination time.

    11:08-11:10

Have you truly come to faith in Jesus Christ?

    11:12-11:19

If you have, these are five ingredients that show up in your life in that process.

    11:20-11:22

    Number one, heartfelt conviction.

    11:24-11:25

    Heartfelt conviction.

    11:25-11:56

verse 37 again it says now when they heard this Peter's sermon Jesus you crucified him now when they heard this they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the rest of the Apostles brothers what shall we do they were cut to the heart and his sudden anguish like what can we do about this step one is is what the Bible calls conviction.

    11:57-11:59

    That's what these people experienced.

    12:00-12:01

    What is conviction?

    12:01-12:10

Well, first of all, conviction is not - conviction is not - everybody say not - conviction is not just grief.

    12:12-12:18

Conviction is not just grief, meaning I'm sorry about the consequences that my sin brought in my life.

    12:19-12:20

    That's grief.

    12:20-12:22

    I did something wrong.

    12:22-12:31

reaping the consequences and I feel really bad about having to reap consequences for my stupid decisions, that's grief. That is not conviction.

    12:33-12:41

Conviction is not - it's not, everybody say not - conviction is not guilt.

    12:44-12:47

Meaning, I'm just sorry because I got caught.

    12:49-13:01

Some people will continue the same sin indefinitely and feel no conviction, feel no emotion toward it whatsoever until they get caught.

    13:02-13:10

And then all of the sudden it's, "Oh, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." Are you sorry about what you did or are you sorry you got caught?

    13:12-13:14

Would you still be sorry today if you hadn't gotten caught?

    13:16-13:24

Now when we talk about grief and guilt, these are sometimes roots of conviction, but these things are not conviction themselves.

    13:25-13:32

When the Bible speaks of conviction, conviction it literally means this.

    13:33-13:36

    Conviction means you're convinced.

    13:37-13:38

    That's literally what it means.

    13:38-13:39

    You're convinced.

    13:41-13:50

You're like, "I'm convinced about what?" No excuses, no defense, no blame.

    13:52-14:11

It's when you get to the point where you say, "I'm a sinner, I can't make it on my own, and I do need God." You're convinced of the reality of your sin and how horrible and sick and destructive and filthy and ungodly your sin is.

    14:12-14:16

And being convinced of your sin crushes you.

    14:17-14:18

    That's conviction.

    14:21-14:25

Conviction is when you get to the point that you say, "I've sinned against God.

    14:26-14:28

My ways have hurt other people.

    14:30-14:40

You know, this thing that I thought was going to make me happy has really made me miserable." It's taking that giant step back, saying, "What am I doing?

    14:41-14:42

    What am I doing?

    14:44-14:52

I thought this was okay, but now I'm convinced that this is wrong." Heartfelt conviction.

    14:54-15:05

Several years ago, we had a--at my old church, we had a young man who, due to some legal problems he was having and some circumstances, he didn't have a place to go.

    15:06-15:08

And one of our elders is actually a camp manager.

    15:09-15:17

And out of the goodness of his heart, he said, "I'll tell you what, until we get you back on your feet, you can stay up at the camp with me.

    15:17-15:19

You know, it was off season, we have room.

    15:19-15:31

You can stay up at the camp with me." And, "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you so much, thank you so much." This young man actually robbed a church camp where he was staying.

    15:33-15:44

This guy rolls out the red carpet and gives him everything that he needs and he steals from the church camp and he gets arrested.

    15:45-15:52

So I went from seeing him on Sunday morning church to seeing him on Friday night church at the Butler County Prison.

    15:53-15:58

He came in and he comes up to me and I'll never forget this.

    15:58-16:07

He comes up to me and he goes, "I guess you heard what I did." Giggling.

    16:08-16:12

"Did you hear what I did?" I wasn't laughing.

    16:13-16:17

I said, "Yeah, I heard what you did." He's like, "Yeah." Whew.

    16:18-16:19

    Proud of himself.

    16:20-16:23

Well, the next week his mother came to the church office.

    16:25-16:50

She's like, "Did you see my son in jail?" I said, "Yeah, I saw him." She said, she goes, "He's really repentant, don't you think?" And I said, "Not at all." She goes, "You don't think he's repentant?" I said, "Not a bit." She goes, "Why don't you think he's repentant?" I said, "Because he was giggling the whole time when he was talking about it. That's how I knew he wasn't repentant. That's not conviction.

    16:51-16:56

Conviction isn't giggling and proud of your sin and "Hey, wasn't that funny?

    16:56-16:58

This guy was gracious to me and I ripped him off.

    16:59-16:59

    Oh, not just him.

    17:00-17:03

A camper, we tell little kids about Jesus.

    17:03-17:05

I ripped the camp off." Isn't that hilarious?

    17:06-17:10

Like, yeah, that's not conviction and that's certainly far from repentance.

    17:11-17:14

Okay, conviction is grief over your sin.

    17:15-17:21

crushed over it because now you're convinced of what it really is.

    17:21-17:26

True conversion starts with being broken over your sin.

    17:26-17:29

Otherwise, you see no need for a savior, right?

    17:30-17:31

You see no need for a savior.

    17:31-17:36

    If I don't have a sin problem, then I don't need a savior.

    17:39-17:40

    How does conviction happen?

    17:40-17:42

It happens today, just like it happened in this passage.

    17:43-18:01

The Holy Spirit works with his Word, that's what was happening with Peter. He's preaching the Word of God and the Holy Spirit was at work. That's what happens here in churches when they proclaim the Word of God. The Holy Spirit is at work with the Word of God.

    18:02-18:30

Now let me ask you, have you been broken over your sin? In other words, do you see your sin as God sees your sin. You need to be broken because nothing happens spiritually until you are. So conviction leads to number two, sincere repentance. These are five ingredients of true conversion. First there's heartfelt conviction. Secondly, there's sincere repentance.

    18:30-18:36

Look at verse 38, "And Peter said to them," like what should we do?

    18:37-18:53

"Peter said to them, 'Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'" So this flows naturally from conviction.

    18:53-18:58

It's a natural result of conviction leading to repentance.

    18:58-19:00

    Like, what is repentance?

    19:00-19:02

Repentance literally means you change your mind.

    19:03-19:04

    You change your mind.

    19:04-19:16

I used to think this way about sin, and I used to think this way about God, and I used to think this way about what Jesus has done, but now I think completely differently about all of those things.

    19:16-19:17

    That's repentance.

    19:19-19:21

And when your mind changes, your actions change too.

    19:23-19:34

Every Old Testament prophet preached repentance. John the Baptist Jesus Christ on the scene preaches repentance.

    19:35-19:37

It's all through the New Testament epistles.

    19:37-19:39

It's all the way even in the book of Revelation.

    19:40-19:47

Repentance because, hear this, there is no forgiveness of sin without repentance.

    19:48-19:50

I've read the Bible a few times.

    19:51-20:01

I have not seen one verse where God says, "You know what, I'm just going to forgive you and it doesn't matter what you do." matter what you do, what you think about me, how you live your life, it just doesn't matter.

    20:01-20:14

You never see that. I've had people challenge me on that, I've challenged them back. I'll give you a hundred dollars for every verse in the Bible you say, or God says, I'll just forgive you but you don't have to repent, just keep living how you're living.

    20:16-20:25

Repentance comes from a genuine hatred of sin. It's moving from actively loving your sin to actively hating your sin.

    20:26-20:26

    That's repentance.

    20:29-20:32

Repentance is when you're at the point where you say, "I'm done with this.

    20:33-20:37

This addiction that I have, I'm done with it.

    20:39-20:50

This sexual sin that I have, that maybe I've been keeping secret from some people, and God knows, and it's wrong, and I'm done with it.

    20:57-21:08

I'm so sick of insisting on my own way and my stupid pride getting in the way, never wanting to say I'm sorry, never seeking forgiveness.

    21:09-21:13

I'm done living like that. I don't want this and God doesn't want this for me.

    21:13-21:14

    That's repentance.

    21:15-21:17

We need to talk about a certain elephant in the room here.

    21:18-21:22

Acts 2.38 has been a verse with much contrast to the verse in Acts 2.39.

    21:22-21:23

    controversy around it.

    21:24-21:34

Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of your sins." We're going to talk more about baptism here in a minute.

    21:36-21:43

Peter says to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins.

    21:45-22:20

from this verse there are some people that believe that unless you get baptized you can't get saved. That's called baptismal regeneration. That means unless you get baptized you can't be saved. I know people that believe this and I don't understand it. I know a guy, he's a hospital chaplain and he had this woman on her deathbed. She was in her 90s and she He was hooked up to all kinds of tubes and monitors and he went and shared the gospel with her and she said she wanted to receive Jesus.

    22:21-22:47

And this hospital chaplain says, "Well, we've got to get her to the tub and baptize her." And the doctors were like, "If you move her, you're going to kill her right now." And this chaplain was like, "Then there's really nothing I can do here." And he basically walked out of there saying, "This woman's going to hell because we couldn't move her to the tub to get her baptized." He believed that.

    22:47-22:49

Now let me ask you, church, is that God?

    22:50-22:51

Does that sound like God to you?

    22:53-22:58

Does that sound like the God you read about in His Word, like He's up in heaven going, "Oh, she's ready to receive me.

    22:58-23:00

Oh, she's going to receive me.

    23:00-23:01

    Her heart's right.

    23:01-23:03

Now get her to the tank.

    23:03-23:04

    Oh, oh.

    23:04-23:06

Sorry, there was nothing I could do for you, ma'am.

    23:07-23:07

    I'm sorry.

    23:08-23:10

just couldn't get you to the tank to get you saved.

    23:10-23:14

That doesn't sound like the God that I read about in his Word.

    23:15-23:18

But there are people that sincerely believe that.

    23:19-23:34

You're like, "Well, what does this say then? I mean, it says be baptized for the forgiveness of sin. What does that mean?" Well, first of all, if being immersed was the way that you got saved, that would be very evident in the book of Acts, wouldn't it?

    23:36-23:45

I mean, if it were true, you see, we go through the book of Acts, you're in Acts chapter 8, Acts chapter 19, you see people that were baptized that weren't saved.

    23:47-23:51

You get to Acts chapter 10, you run into people that were saved and weren't yet baptized.

    23:53-23:59

So you don't see this formula of "dumped, saved, dumped, saved." You don't see that in the book of Acts.

    24:00-24:02

You don't see that taught in the epistles.

    24:04-24:13

That's why Paul says, "What is it in 1 Corinthians he talks about, 'I didn't baptize'?" Well, if that's how you get people saved, Paul, why weren't you baptizing people?

    24:14-24:14

    Lame!

    24:16-24:18

Because baptism isn't the thing that saves you.

    24:19-24:23

Like, "Well, okay, what about this Acts 2.38 thing?" Well, it's simple.

    24:26-24:32

The Greek word for "for" is used in the same way that the word "for" is used in English.

    24:33-24:34

    It's used the same ways.

    24:36-24:39

Let me give you a couple examples of how we use the word "for" in English.

    24:40-24:45

I say to you, "I'm going to the store for some bread." What does that mean?

    24:45-24:52

"I'm going to the store in order to obtain some bread." That's how "for" is used, right?

    24:55-25:36

Some people say, "Well, that's what Peter's saying here, 'Be baptized in order to obtain forgiveness of sin.'" But you know, another way we use the word "for" in the English, which is the way it's used in this passage, what if I said to you, "I had to take an aspirin for my headache." Would you say, "You took an aspirin in order to obtain a headache?" "No, I took an aspirin as a result of having a headache." That's how we use the word "for" there, and that's how Peter was using the word "for" here, meaning "as a result of." Be baptized as a result of being forgiven of your sin.

    25:38-25:39

We'll talk more about baptism in a second here.

    25:40-25:45

But repentance is another proof of the genuineness of your salvation.

    25:47-25:49

Peter says you receive the forgiveness of sin.

    25:50-25:58

Notice he says, "the gift of the Holy Spirit." The gift of the Holy Spirit.

    25:58-26:02

Again, the Holy Spirit doesn't come because of the baptism.

    26:03-26:06

That would be like a work that you have to do.

    26:07-26:09

He says the Holy Spirit's a gift.

    26:09-26:15

It's an unmerited, unearned, free gift that's given to everyone who comes to Jesus Christ.

    26:16-26:19

The second ingredient is sincere repentance.

    26:20-26:52

2nd Corinthians 7 10 the Apostle Paul says for godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation right along what we're seeing here conviction to repentance evidence of salvation so number three godly motivation godly motivation good verse 39 Peter says for the promises for you and for your children and for all who are far off.

    26:54-26:57

Everyone whom the Lord, our God calls to himself.

    26:59-27:05

I'll compare that with verse 21, verse 21 says, everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

    27:06-27:10

And verse 39 says, everyone whom the Lord, our God calls to himself.

    27:11-27:13

We've seen this a few times already, haven't we?

    27:14-27:17

There's a sovereignty and salvation that we don't fully understand.

    27:19-27:28

that somehow the Lord sovereignly chooses us and we have the responsibility to choose to follow Him.

    27:28-27:35

And I've told you this before, I can't explain that because God is God and I am not, right?

    27:36-27:42

So it makes sense to God that He calls us and we have the responsibility to choose.

    27:42-27:45

And here in the same passage, again, we see both.

    27:46-27:52

But you have to see as we're looking at this verse right now, we're talking about people that the Lord calls to himself.

    27:54-28:00

This is a glorious truth about conversion, about coming to Christ, is it is a response to God calling you.

    28:03-28:17

Any true conversion, any true person that comes to Jesus Christ carries with it this sense of, "I just know that it was the Lord calling me." It has to be that motivation.

    28:18-28:22

Because no other motivation is authentic.

    28:23-28:30

Like the guy that says, "My wife's been on my case because I don't go to church, so I go to church with her just to get her off my back.

    28:30-28:42

You know, our marriage has been in trouble and she says it's because I'm not interested in church, so I guess I'll get real interested in church." That's a wrong motivation.

    28:43-28:47

Or, "I'm going to go to church because I'll make some new business contacts there.

    28:48-28:55

I'll meet some people there that might be potential clients or buy what I'm selling or whatever." That's a wrong motivation.

    28:57-28:58

Or, "You know why I'm going to go to church?

    28:59-29:05

I've been going to a lot of bars to try to meet a lady and I haven't really met the kind of girl that I'd want to settle down with.

    29:05-29:07

You know a good place to meet a girl at church.

    29:07-29:11

    I'll get a good church-going girl." That's a wrong motivation.

    29:13-29:21

Speaking of the guy that goes to church, you know, pretends to get all serious about the Lord for his wife's sake.

    29:24-29:27

Watch what happens if that marriage goes south and she divorces him.

    29:27-29:29

Do you think he's still going to go to church?

    29:30-29:30

    No.

    29:31-29:32

    No, his motivation's gone.

    29:35-29:37

You see, these aren't right motivations.

    29:38-29:44

The right motivation, the godly motivation, knowing that it is the Lord that is calling you.

    29:45-29:51

It's the guy or the woman who says, "I don't care if following Christ costs me my job because I know God's calling me.

    29:52-29:54

I don't care if following Christ costs me my friends.

    29:55-30:00

I don't care if following Christ, if He calls me to mission work full-time.

    30:01-30:05

I don't care if Christ calls me to sweep the floor at the church.

    30:05-30:08

I know that God's calling me and I'm not turning back.

    30:09-30:13

That's godly motivation. That's someone that knows that God is calling them.

    30:16-30:29

That's why everything in the Christian life, conversion, small group involvement, discipleship, personal evangelism, small group outreach, mission work, all of those things fall under the banner of "Well, why do you do that?" Because God's calling me.

    30:30-30:37

I'm doing this for Jesus and because of Jesus. That's why I'm doing what I'm Godly motivation.

    30:38-30:47

The fourth ingredient, the fourth ingredient is radical separation, radical separation.

    30:49-31:09

Verse 40 says, "And with many other words he bore witness, continued to exhort them, saying, 'Save yourselves from this crooked generation.'" Was this some dialogue that he was having with the people after this sermon?

    31:11-31:14

    Whatever the case, radical separation.

    31:14-31:16

We see the content of this discussion.

    31:19-31:27

When Peter says, "You need to save yourselves from this crooked generation." You know, when you're in Christ, the Bible says you're a new creature.

    31:29-31:30

The new has come, the old has passed.

    31:30-31:32

You're a new creature in Christ.

    31:33-31:41

2 Corinthians 5.17 and that's something that you can testify to that you've experienced or you haven't experienced it.

    31:42-31:50

But when you're truly in Christ you know, the people that are in Christ here know what it means that the old has passed, the new has come.

    31:50-31:52

What it means to be a new creature in Christ.

    31:54-31:59

You know the guy that says, "Well, you know I'm thinking about becoming a Christian but can I still do this?

    31:59-32:05

Or, you know, as long as I don't have to give up this or change this, or how much sin can I get away with?

    32:07-32:11

People that say those kinds of things, you know, that communicate something about their hearts.

    32:13-32:19

People that are unwilling to give up a sinful lifestyle that says something about your heart.

    32:21-32:29

In other words, you don't seek separation because you aren't God motivated, because you haven't repented, because you haven't been convicted.

    32:31-32:44

The bottom line is this, when God's Holy Spirit comes in and dwells in you, one of the glorious things He does, one of the biggest evidences that God's Holy Spirit lives in you is He changes your appetites. He changes your appetites.

    32:46-32:48

In the flesh, by nature, we're hungry for sin.

    32:50-32:54

When God's Holy Spirit comes in and dwells in us, We're hungry for the things of God.

    32:55-32:57

We have this hunger for prayer that we didn't have before.

    32:58-33:01

We have this natural hunger for God's Word that we didn't have before.

    33:02-33:05

We have a hunger for fellowship and serving Christ together.

    33:05-33:10

These are things that we love to do and long to do because the Holy Spirit has put those appetites in us.

    33:12-33:14

It's a lot like food addiction.

    33:15-33:17

You know, you develop your appetites.

    33:20-33:29

And if you're like me, How many people here would say that when it comes to food you have an appetite for garbage?

    33:30-33:33

How many people would say that? We can be honest, come on, nobody's judging you here.

    33:34-33:44

And you know what? That's me sometimes. Sometimes I'm, you know, Pepsi and how many Twinkies can I fit in my mouth and stuff like that.

    33:44-33:49

I have an appetite for unhealthy things.

    33:50-34:15

And here's what I've noticed, when I discipline myself to eat healthy, after a week or two, I start to lose my appetite for the Pepsi and the Twinkies, and I actually, believe it or not, I actually enjoy the carrots and the spinach, and I actually would rather have a glass of water than a glass of pop.

    34:15-34:17

Can anybody else testify to that?

    34:17-34:18

Like, yeah, I know what you mean.

    34:18-34:22

Your appetites do kind of change, and then you get back to the old habits.

    34:23-34:33

Here's the point. When you come to Christ, it's not about, "I'm going to have self-discipline to have these new appetites." The Holy Spirit puts those new appetites into your heart.

    34:33-34:42

Like, "I want to." That's why Jesus said, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness." That's evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work in you.

    34:44-34:53

Now you want to live a holy life because you see that many are on the broad path that leads to destruction.

    34:53-35:03

Which is why Peter said, "Save yourselves from this crooked generation." These people that are living in their sin and life is one big beer commercial and party.

    35:04-35:07

They're on a cruise ship that's going down. Do you want to be on that ship?

    35:07-35:09

    Save yourself from this generation.

    35:11-35:19

And the person that experiences this radical separation can look at that old lifestyle and those old sin habits and say, "You know what?

    35:20-35:20

    That's not for me.

    35:21-35:27

That's not who I am anymore because God's Holy Spirit has given me new appetites." Radical separation.

    35:27-35:37

And then finally, the last ingredient of true conversion is public profession.

    35:41-35:53

It says, "So those who received His word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls." So Peter told them to be baptized.

    35:54-36:07

It says, "They received His word on all of this stuff, but including baptism." It says, "And they were baptized." So why baptism?

    36:07-36:11

You saw in the picture that we were baptizing people in Thailand.

    36:11-36:14

Why baptism? Why do we do that?

    36:14-36:23

When you think about it, if we can just take a step back for a second and just try to look at it with fresh eyes, baptism is kind of a weird thing, don't you think?

    36:24-36:24

    I mean, let's be honest.

    36:25-36:29

Isn't it, from a worldly point of view, isn't baptism kind of a weird thing?

    36:30-36:33

Like, "Oh, you've changed your belief system.

    36:33-36:38

Well, let me grab you and dunk you in water." Doesn't that sound weird?

    36:38-36:39

    Why do we do that?

    36:41-36:46

Well baptism is the profession of faith.

    36:48-37:00

Profession of faith in Christ biblically isn't, you know, if you want to receive Jesus raise your hand or if you want to tell people that you came to Christ just pull out this card and put it in the offering and we'll read them next week.

    37:01-37:05

Biblically, the profession of faith is baptism.

    37:05-37:06

    And why is that?

    37:07-37:09

Why do we dunk people in water?

    37:11-37:17

Because you're identifying with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection.

    37:17-37:18

    That's why we baptize.

    37:18-37:21

That water is like a liquid tomb.

    37:22-37:26

And when you go down in the water, what you're saying is, "I'm dead.

    37:28-37:31

My old self has been crucified with Christ.

    37:31-38:00

I am dead. And when you come up out of the water, what you're saying is I identify with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The life that I live is no longer me. It's Christ alive in me. You know, I'm raised with Jesus Christ. It's a beautiful picture of identifying with Isn't that a beautiful picture of identification with Jesus Christ?

    38:01-38:22

But there are the, you know, people can hear the message, be baptized, and immediately we jump to the other end of the spectrum and say, well, being baptized doesn't make you saved, and you don't have to get baptized to get saved, So why should I get baptized?

    38:22-38:26

And as usual in the church, we gravitate towards the extremes.

    38:26-38:38

You have the people that say, "You can't get saved unless you're baptized." And then you have the people over here that say, "Baptism is not important." And the answer is somewhere here.

    38:38-38:41

They say, "Baptism is important." It is.

    38:42-38:45

It is the public profession of faith in Jesus Christ.

    38:46-38:48

Which is why Peter brought it up.

    38:50-38:53

And when it comes to obedience and baptism, it's a hard issue.

    38:54-39:07

Some people get so wrapped up in the "I'm not performing some work, I'm not going to publicly do this." Some people get so caught up in the idea that it's not the thing that gets you saved.

    39:09-39:11

Please hear my heart on this, church.

    39:12-39:15

Sometimes we can neglect just pure and simple obedience.

    39:18-39:20

I'm not chewing anybody out for not being baptized.

    39:21-39:22

I just want to encourage you.

    39:24-39:37

That if you haven't been baptized, that you've given your life to Christ, you see very clearly in His Word that this is a step that God calls you to take.

    39:39-40:08

testimony of a changed life and it's an encouragement to those that get to witness this profession. If there was ever anybody who walked the earth that didn't need to get baptized it was probably Jesus right? But in Matthew chapter 3 in verse 15 Jesus said that he needed to be baptized in order to fulfill all righteousness. What does that mean?

    40:08-40:17

Basically what that means is this, Jesus said the Father wants me to get baptized so I'm going to get baptized. God wants me to.

    40:18-40:38

God wants me to get baptized and I would just challenge you if you have sort of put it off or sort of kicked against the idea of being baptized I just want to challenge you with this, if saying God wants me to do it Is it a good enough reason for you to be baptized?

    40:40-40:41

See, baptism is like a wedding.

    40:42-40:52

Just like in a wedding you have two people that love each other and are making a commitment to one another before God and before man.

    40:52-40:54

    That's really what baptism is.

    40:54-40:55

    It's making a commitment.

    40:55-41:00

You're showing your commitment to Jesus Christ before God and before man.

    41:05-41:06

    It's an important part.

    41:08-41:17

We have baptism services every two or three months usually, and I encourage you if you haven't taken that step, talk to me about that.

    41:17-41:18

    It's important.

    41:19-41:24

The question that we're examining as we looked at this passage today, was your conversion real?

    41:25-41:30

I just want you to take a second and look inwardly and think about your walk with Christ.

    41:31-41:38

When you came to Christ, did you experience a real heartfelt conviction over your sin?

    41:40-41:41

When you came to Christ, did you repent?

    41:44-41:49

Did you change your mind and see your actions change as well?

    41:51-41:54

Would you say that your coming to Christ was God motivated?

    41:55-41:57

I know that He called me.

    41:59-42:06

Did you see in your life when you came to Christ a radical separation from a sinful lifestyle and sinful habits?

    42:06-42:14

And did you see that radical separation as the Holy Spirit changed your appetites?

    42:16-42:22

When you came to Christ, did you make the profession of faith that God's Word calls you to make?

    42:24-42:29

and be baptized, that you make that public profession of faith.

    42:31-42:48

If you aren't sure, if you have experienced a true conversion, if you're hearing these things and say, "You know what, I'm not, I don't know." Or maybe there's someone here that's sure that they haven't.

    42:49-42:53

But we have people down here who would just love to pray with you.

    42:55-43:00

And if God is calling you to get real, now is not the time to be shy.

    43:01-43:05

Today could be the most important day of your life.

    43:07-43:10

This could be the biggest decision that you ever make.

    43:11-43:14

To say, "I'm done. I'm done playing church.

    43:15-43:43

I'm done pretending. I'm done hiding. I'm not settling for anything less than a real thing. I'm done and pray with this. Father in heaven, I pray for anyone in this room right now who hasn't come to faith in Christ. Today would be the day that they hear you calling them.

    43:45-43:47

Father, we know that you have been calling them.

    43:49-43:51

I pray today's the day that they hear that.

    43:52-43:59

Father, if there's someone here who's not sure, I pray that they don't put off investigating.

    44:01-44:04

They don't put off this sincere seeking.

    44:05-44:10

that they would come down and simply seek your face.

    44:12-44:32

Father, we want nothing more than just to be real before you and allow your Holy Spirit to take these broken and sincere hearts and manifest your glory, manifest your presence among us.

    44:34-44:43

Father, we thank you for the glorious gift of your Son, as we saw in this passage today, the glorious gift of your Holy Spirit.

    44:45-44:52

We thank you, Father, that you are the God who pursues us, you are the God who loves us, you are the God who calls us.

    44:55-44:57

In Jesus' mighty and holy name we pray.

    44:58-44:59

    Amen.
