Open up your Bibles with me please to the book of Acts and chapter 19.

    01:08-01:13

Before I turn it over I'd like to remind you that July 2nd is Q&A day.

    01:14-01:15

We have these once or twice a year.

    01:16-01:23

You can take one of these slips of paper, buy the fishbowls, there's one back on that shelf cubby thing back in guest reception.

    01:23-01:26

And I think there's one in the cafe area as well.

    01:26-01:28

Just look for a fishbowl with no fish in it.

    01:29-01:31

and grab one of these pieces of paper and you can ask anything.

    01:32-01:35

Theology related, you know, what's this verse about in the Bible?

    01:35-01:37

What does your church teach about that?

    01:37-01:40

We've had all kinds of great questions. It's always a fun time.

    01:40-01:44

But this will be instead of a sermon on July 2nd, we'll be answering your questions.

    01:45-01:47

    So, ask away, alright?

    01:50-01:52

Let's pray before we get into God's Word together.

    01:54-02:00

Father in heaven, we just want to pause right now and open our hearts before You.

    02:00-02:09

And God, I ask on behalf of this congregation here, I pray, Father, for a supernatural attentiveness.

    02:12-02:23

Because God, we live in a day where everything is a 30-second commercial or a 20-second internet sound bite or whatever.

    02:23-02:37

And we're accustomed to such short attention spans, so this idea of listening to somebody talk for a half hour or more is just, seems a little archaic.

    02:37-02:45

But, Father, we do this because Your Word says that You've ordained preaching, that faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of Christ.

    02:45-02:47

    And Father, we believe that.

    02:49-02:55

So I pray that You would remove distractions and let us zero in and focus on what Your Word has to say.

    02:55-03:00

This is the Word of the living God, and I pray that we would treat it as such.

    03:03-03:06

    Jesus' name, amen.

    03:09-03:16

Acts chapter 19, we're getting back to our series, The Unstoppable Church, and we are following Paul on his missionary journey.

    03:16-03:26

And we're on his third trip now, or he went back to Ephesus, or he stayed somewhere between two and three years.

    03:26-03:34

Now, usually when I get up to speak, I sort of explain the text and then show you the point.

    03:37-03:39

But I'm gonna do it a little differently today.

    03:39-03:41

    I'm gonna do it opposite.

    03:41-03:47

I'm going to tell you the point and then I want us to see it in the text, okay?

    03:48-03:53

I'm gonna tell you the point I want you to trust me that while you're doing your job throughout the week, I'm doing my job and I've been studying this.

    03:53-03:58

I want to tell you the point, and then let's see it in the text.

    03:58-03:58

    You ready?

    03:59-03:59

    Here's the point.

    04:01-04:04

The point is from actually the book of Proverbs 22.

    04:05-04:06

    In verse 1.

    04:07-04:13

Proverbs says, "A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches.

    04:15-04:26

"Favor is better than silver or gold." So Proverbs sort of gives us an equation.

    04:27-04:29

And the equation looks something like this.

    04:29-04:43

"A good name is greater than riches." And we're going to see in this passage today how the word of God illustrates this equation.

    04:44-04:45

A good name is greater than riches.

    04:47-04:50

I want to show you just very simply today, I'm going to show you how money can be a problem.

    04:52-04:56

And how a good name can be a lifesaver.

    04:57-04:58

I'll jot this down first of all.

    04:58-05:03

Number one, I can't think of any other way to say it other than this.

    05:03-05:05

The love of money brings destruction.

    05:06-05:09

The love of money brings destruction.

    05:09-05:12

Look at verses 21-22 where we left off last time.

    05:14-05:40

"Now after these events," from two weeks ago we discussed, "Paul resolved in the spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and to go to Jerusalem, saying, 'After I have been there, I must also see Rome.' And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, He himself stayed in Asia for a while.

    05:41-05:51

So the plan was to take an offering at Macedonia in Achaia, and to take that offering to the poor church in Jerusalem.

    05:52-05:58

A couple of years back we did a sermon series called "I Love to Give" and that sermon series was all about this event.

    05:59-06:05

It was about how these churches raised money to help these poor Christians in Jerusalem.

    06:05-06:08

    in 2 Corinthians 8-9.

    06:09-06:10

But that's what he's talking about here.

    06:11-06:13

And he eventually makes it to Jerusalem.

    06:13-06:14

We're going to see that in 21.17.

    06:15-06:18

And Paul says his goal is to get to where?

    06:18-06:19

    What does your Bible say?

    06:20-06:29

Verse 21, "I must also see Rome." The goal is to get to Rome, and that's important because that's sort of the undercurrent of the rest of the book of Acts.

    06:30-06:36

He sees Rome as this finish line, and the trip doesn't go exactly as he planned.

    06:37-06:46

He says he's going to stay in Asia, that's Asia Minor, that's modern day Turkey, Ephesus specifically, he's going to stay in Ephesus for now.

    06:46-06:59

Luke 23, "About that time, there arose no little disturbance concerning the way," that was another name for Christianity, the church of Jesus Christ.

    07:00-07:12

A man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen.

    07:13-07:16

Artemis, another name for Artemis is Diana.

    07:17-07:21

She was the goddess of fertility among several other things.

    07:21-07:24

And Demetrius, his job was to make these shrines.

    07:25-07:27

    These were little household idols.

    07:27-07:29

And we kind of saw these when we were in Thailand.

    07:30-07:33

You know, when you go to Thailand, there's Buddha statues everywhere.

    07:34-07:39

And you can see the big ones up on the hill and you can buy them to have in your house.

    07:39-07:46

And even up in the mountain jungle areas, they had little idols that they would put on their shelves in their home.

    07:46-07:49

They were these little household gods, so to speak.

    07:49-07:53

And Demetrius, he made silver idols.

    07:55-08:05

Actually, in the Roman Empire, There were 33 temples for Artemis, making it by far the most popular cult of the day.

    08:06-08:13

And did you know the temple in Ephesus we'll be speaking of here was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world?

    08:14-08:15

They said it was so magnificent.

    08:16-08:20

But this passage probably took place during the annual festival.

    08:20-08:26

They had this yearly festival for Artemis.

    08:27-08:33

and I went to college in Ohio, and every little teeny town in Ohio has their own weekly fest.

    08:33-08:44

So there was the Circleville Pumpkin Show, and there was the, let me think, there was the Reynoldsburg Tomato Fest, which Reynoldsburg, Ohio claims that they were the birthplace of tomatoes.

    08:44-08:46

I'm like, I don't think you invented tomatoes.

    08:48-09:00

Obetz had the Zucchini Fest, but all these little towns have their own little like vegetable fest, and all these people come, there's like a carnival, And there's food, it's a circle of pumpkin fest, everything was pumpkin themed.

    09:00-09:08

They had like the world's largest pumpkin pie and you can get pumpkin flavored cotton candy and pumpkin toothpaste and pumpkin, whatever you want.

    09:08-09:15

You pumpkin everything, but these festivals, like this festival for Artemis would bring in a lot of people.

    09:16-09:19

And when you bring in a lot of people to these festivals, what else does that bring?

    09:21-09:22

    Brings money, doesn't it?

    09:23-09:24

You see where this is going.

    09:25-09:25

    Look at verse 25.

    09:27-09:46

So Demetrius gathered together, says, "These he gathered together with the workmen in similar trades," all these craftsmen, all these skilled laborers who made these idols, "and said, 'Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth.

    09:47-10:04

And you see in here, not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people saying that gods made with hands are not gods.

    10:07-10:29

And there is danger, not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom Asia and the world worship.

    10:31-10:53

When they heard this, they were enraged and were crying out, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" So the city was filled with confusion and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel.

    10:54-10:55

    Let's stop there.

    10:57-11:02

So Demetrius stands up and says, "Guys, we're having a major financial issue on the horizon.

    11:03-11:12

Paul is out preaching, telling people that Jesus Christ is the Savior, turning people from idolatry." You know, Paul's message.

    11:12-11:15

Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay the penalty for your sins.

    11:15-11:17

He rose from the dead to give you eternal life.

    11:18-11:21

Paul's preaching is saying, "Look, these little trinkets aren't God's.

    11:22-11:25

There's a living God who lives in heaven who sent His Son to die for your sins.

    11:26-11:30

That's God." Now all these people are turning to Christ.

    11:32-11:33

    Not good for business.

    11:34-11:35

    If you make idols.

    11:37-11:43

She's like, "Guys, we've got to do something about this." It started a riot.

    11:43-11:53

Verse 29 says, "The city was filled with confusion." They grabbed Gaius and Aristarchus, they were a couple of buddies of Paul's, and they rushed to the theater.

    11:53-11:56

You know, there's still ruins of this theater today.

    11:56-11:57

    You can go there.

    11:59-12:01

    It held about 25,000 people.

    12:03-12:05

Right? It was bigger than PPG Paints Arena.

    12:07-12:09

Gaius, we don't know a whole lot about him.

    12:09-12:13

Aristarchus, we're going to see more of him in chapter 20 and chapters 27.

    12:15-12:18

But the love of money brings destruction.

    12:20-12:25

We're going to see in this passage, rioting and violence and confusion and anxiety.

    12:26-12:29

And apparently here, kidnapping is also on the list over what?

    12:31-12:32

    Over money.

    12:34-12:43

Let me ask you, do you think someone's desire for money has ever caused them to inflict pain upon someone else?

    12:43-12:44

Do you think that's ever happened?

    12:46-12:50

Do you think that a fight has ever started over money?

    12:52-12:56

You think that someone's ever killed somebody over money?

    12:58-13:00

There I ask, do you think that money caused a war?

    13:01-13:03

You think a war has ever broken out because of money?

    13:03-13:03

    You think that's ever happened?

    13:04-13:10

Do you think money, do you think the love, it's not money itself, money's just, it's just paper and metal, right?

    13:10-13:13

It's not the money itself, it's the love of money.

    13:13-13:26

But do you think the love of money has ever been so, such an obsession with people that they would go to war over money?

    13:26-13:26

    Do you think that's happened?

    13:28-13:30

I was studying that this week and I'm gonna tell you the truth.

    13:31-13:34

I couldn't find a war that didn't start over money.

    13:36-13:40

The US Revolution, you know, to Europe, do you know what the US Revolution was?

    13:40-13:46

I know what it means to us, you know, you know, American flag and Star-Spangled Banner and, you know, independence.

    13:46-13:47

Do you know what it meant to Europe?

    13:47-13:50

It was the British and the French fighting over commodities and trade routes.

    13:52-13:55

That there was an economic undertone in the US Revolution.

    13:56-14:01

The Civil War, well, hang on, Pastor Jeff, the Civil War was about slavery.

    14:03-14:04

And what was the issue behind slavery?

    14:05-14:06

    What drove slavery?

    14:07-14:10

Slavery was driven by demand for cotton and agricultural good.

    14:11-14:16

And the idea of freeing the slaves meant that I'm going to take a financial hit, and I can't have that.

    14:16-14:20

So you see, even the Civil War, motivated by money.

    14:20-14:26

Pearl Harbor, Japan wanted to knock the US out in order to get resources in South Asia.

    14:27-14:29

The Iraq invasion of Kuwait, what was that about?

    14:32-14:34

I heard somebody say oil. Why oil?

    14:35-14:37

Money, right? Where there's oil, there's money.

    14:39-14:40

And I could go on and on.

    14:40-14:43

I had this whole list and I deleted a lot of them.

    14:43-14:44

    Everybody say thank you.

    14:45-14:45

    You're welcome.

    14:47-14:48

    Do a little research yourself.

    14:49-14:53

Wars over love of money, even making it very personal.

    14:55-15:03

You know, up in Butler, several years ago, Aaron, my wife Aaron actually knows this family personally.

    15:04-15:28

But there was a mentally retarded man who was tortured for weeks by another man and his female cousin, who eventually took this man and set him on fire in a bathtub, and then choked him, and then took his body and burned it the rest of the way in a dumpster.

    15:30-15:35

You know what motivated such horrific treatment to a mentally challenged person?

    15:35-15:36

Do you know what motivated that?

    15:38-15:40

They thought that he took a handful of money.

    15:42-15:44

This is what the love of money does.

    15:44-15:46

The love of money brings destruction.

    15:48-15:56

In your community, globally, in your home, you'll hurt others.

    15:56-16:00

You will stomp all over someone else if money is your God.

    16:02-16:05

But if that's not motivating enough, the Bible tells you, you're going to hurt yourself, too.

    16:06-16:08

Timothy 6.10, look what Paul says to Timothy.

    16:09-16:18

He says, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils." Notice he doesn't say money's the root of all evil, love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.

    16:18-16:37

"It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs." Paul says, "Timothy, there are people that are stabbing themselves because they're obsessed with money.

    16:39-16:41

And at this point, you're like, man, I hope that's not me.

    16:42-16:43

    How do I know?

    16:43-16:44

I want you to jot this down.

    16:44-16:46

Three signs that money has become your God.

    16:46-16:47

    It's right from the text.

    16:47-16:48

    Right from the text.

    16:50-16:54

That's what I love about just when you do expository preaching, you don't have to make stuff up.

    16:54-16:55

Like it's just right in the text, you know?

    16:56-16:57

    Check it out.

    16:58-17:00

Three signs money has become your God.

    17:00-17:01

Take a serious look at yourself.

    17:02-17:06

Number one, you view Jesus or the church as an obstacle to your financial goals.

    17:07-17:11

You view Jesus or the church as an obstacle to your financial goals.

    17:13-17:20

This passage is an obvious contrast, because if you recall the previous passage, same place, Ephesus, you remember what happened?

    17:20-17:25

All these occultic people came to Christ, and what did they do?

    17:25-17:28

They took their books and made a bonfire.

    17:28-17:34

And the Bible points out specifically what a financial loss that would have been.

    17:35-17:37

Somewhere around the neighborhood of $5 million.

    17:38-17:51

And they're like, "I'm following Christ now, don't need this garbage, burn it." "That cost $5 million, burn it." "But think of all the money." Like get the marshmallows, we're making s'mores out of our occultic books, right?

    17:52-17:53

    Because they're nothing.

    17:54-17:56

But that's $5 million, it's nothing compared to following Christ.

    17:57-18:07

So you have that, and now you have people making idols saying, "We can't have the church interfere "with our business." You see the difference?

    18:08-18:09

    Here's the difference.

    18:10-18:11

This is where it's gonna hit home for you.

    18:14-18:21

Give up the love of money to follow Jesus Christ, or you can give up Jesus Christ to follow the love of money.

    18:23-18:24

    But you can't do both.

    18:25-18:28

According to Jesus, who said no one can serve two masters.

    18:29-18:35

For either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

    18:36-18:37

You cannot serve God and money.

    18:39-18:44

And some people see Jesus/the church as an obstacle to financial goals.

    18:44-18:45

What do you mean by that?

    18:45-18:48

Some people see the church just as, all they want is money.

    18:49-19:00

You know, you go to the church and they want you to give, and they're gonna pass the offering bags, and give to this mission work, and give to this kids program, and give to plant churches to tell people in other countries about Jesus.

    19:02-19:15

I can think of a lot worse things to spend your money on than to give to advance the Kingdom of God, to share the truth of God's Word, and show compassion in the name of Jesus Christ.

    19:17-19:18

You don't want to give your money to that?

    19:18-19:20

Some people see the church as a competitor.

    19:21-19:28

Churches want my money, and I won't be able to buy my toys and boats and...

    19:29-19:31

If that's how you view the church, then you need to check yourself.

    19:34-19:35

Because maybe money's become your God.

    19:37-19:44

Number two, three signs money's become your God, your religious beliefs are based on your financial well-being.

    19:46-19:58

I don't know about you, but I think there's so much humor in a Bible, when I just laugh out loud at some things and I'm not making light of God's word at all, but I think some of these things, I just, I think they're hilarious.

    19:59-20:00

    But look at verse 26.

    20:02-20:09

Demetrius says that Paul is turning all these people away from, you know, worshiping Artemis.

    20:09-20:10

But I love the last phrase.

    20:10-20:11

    This is his claim.

    20:11-20:13

This is what Paul's saying, okay?

    20:15-20:17

Saying that God's made with hands are not God's.

    20:19-20:24

Where do you get off telling me that gods made with hands are not gods?

    20:26-20:33

Who do you think you are telling me that my little Artemis toy is not a god?

    20:33-20:34

Who do you think you are?

    20:35-20:37

Can you believe Paul's running around saying that you can't make a god with your hands?

    20:38-20:39

    Can you believe that?

    20:41-20:47

Well, Demetrius, I have a question, just very objectively, I just wanna ask, is Paul right?

    20:48-20:48

    Is Paul right?

    20:50-20:55

Well, so interpretation by voting, how many people here would say that Paul's right?

    20:55-20:57

God's made with hands or not God's.

    20:57-20:58

Yeah, that's what I would say.

    21:00-21:02

Here's the problem, the theology wasn't based on truth.

    21:02-21:05

The theology was based on what I want, right?

    21:05-21:08

He can't say that because that's not good for me.

    21:10-21:12

And this still happens today, by the way.

    21:13-21:16

That's why the prosperity gospel gets so much traction.

    21:16-21:29

The prosperity gospel says God wants you to be healthy, and God wants you to be wealthy, and if you're not, you have a faith problem, and if you send me money, I'll pray for you, and God will make you rich, and make you healthy, and...

    21:29-21:30

Do you know why they get so much traction?

    21:31-21:33

Who doesn't want to be healthy and wealthy?

    21:34-21:35

I would love to be healthy and wealthy!

    21:35-21:36

    I would love that!

    21:36-21:37

I would love to be totally healthy!

    21:38-22:01

I'd love to have these riches they're talking about, but the problem with the prosperity gospel is you become more obsessed with the gift than the gift giver. So when your religious beliefs are based on your financial well-being or what you want versus what God's actually said then maybe money's become your God.

    22:03-22:19

Number three, this cracked me up too. Number three, you get anxiety over the thought of losing money. Look at verse 27. Did you just hear Demetrius here as he's He's giving this speech, he has his group of tradesmen all huddled up.

    22:20-22:24

Look at, what did I say, 27.

    22:24-22:36

And there is danger, not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and she may even be deposed from her magnificence.

    22:37-22:40

She whom all Asia and the world worship.

    22:40-22:43

Did you see his argument to them?

    22:44-22:55

He goes, "Look, if this gospel keeps going out, not only will our shop close, but the Artemis Temple will close, and the world will end!" All that escalated quickly.

    22:58-23:06

That kind of panic and desperation that you see in verse 27 shows you who Demetrius' God is.

    23:08-23:20

And again, bringing it home, when you have panic and desperation concerning money and stuff, maybe money's become your God.

    23:22-23:25

See, some people look to money for peace.

    23:27-23:32

When the Bible says the peace of Christ guards your heart, is Jesus your peace or is money your peace?

    23:34-23:36

Some people look to money for stability.

    23:38-23:47

"I feel secure. I feel stable." When the Bible says, Christ is the rock that we stand on.

    23:48-23:51

Some people look to money for satisfaction.

    23:53-23:58

"I'll be satisfied when I get X number of dollars." And I'm telling you, that never happens.

    23:59-24:00

    It's always one dollar more.

    24:00-24:00

You just need one dollar more.

    24:01-24:02

You just need one dollar more.

    24:02-24:03

    Read the testimonies yourself.

    24:04-24:07

The testimonies of people that have had it all.

    24:08-24:09

    Money does not satisfy.

    24:11-24:12

    Christ alone satisfies.

    24:14-24:20

But when we turn our hearts to looking to money for things that are only promised by God, that's a problem.

    24:22-24:23

    That's a problem.

    24:23-24:29

You know, Erin is an office manager for a financial planner.

    24:30-24:32

She sees this all the time.

    24:34-24:46

If somebody's portfolio takes like this half of a percent hit, Aaron says, "There's people that will call, they're literally bawling, they're crying." "What are we going to do?" Aaron's like, "Dude, just like, wait a week.

    24:47-24:58

Okay, these things go up and down." But when it goes down a hair, people are in a frenzy, and people are screaming, and people are furious, and people are freaking out.

    24:59-24:59

    Over what?

    25:01-25:02

    for their God.

    25:04-25:06

Three signs that money's become your God.

    25:08-25:09

Okay, so the love of money brings destruction.

    25:10-25:12

Does anybody need sold on that?

    25:13-25:14

I think it's pretty clear from the text.

    25:16-25:17

    Love of money brings destruction.

    25:18-25:18

    Let's go on.

    25:19-25:20

    Second part, write this down.

    25:20-25:24

Number two, a good name brings protection.

    25:26-25:27

    A good name brings protection.

    25:28-25:29

    Look at verse 30.

    25:30-25:37

So when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, okay, so this riot's happening, Paul's like, "I gotta, they grabbed two of my buddies.

    25:37-25:40

"I gotta go and like yank them out of there." Like, "What's your plan, Paul?

    25:40-25:45

"I don't have one, I just gotta get there." When Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.

    25:45-25:48

Okay, the church was like, "Dude, they will rip you apart.

    25:48-26:03

"They are like in a frenzy, you can't go out there." Verse 31, "And even some of the Asiarchs "who were friends of his sent to him were urging him not to venture into the theater.

    26:05-26:10

Okay, so the church didn't want him in, but the Bible says the Asiarchs didn't want him to go either.

    26:11-26:12

Who in the world were the Asiarchs?

    26:12-26:16

Well, they were members of some of the wealthiest families in Asia.

    26:18-26:21

And it was sort of a family/religious organization.

    26:21-26:24

Their job, honestly, was to promote emperor worship.

    26:25-26:25

    That was their job.

    26:25-26:28

They promoted worship of the Roman emperor.

    26:30-26:34

They were not Christians by any stretch of the imagination, but the Bible says they were friends with Paul.

    26:34-26:36

We're gonna talk about that again in a second.

    26:37-26:38

    Look at verse 32.

    26:39-26:52

It says, "Now some cried out one thing, some another, but the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together." You ever seen that?

    26:54-26:54

    I sure have.

    26:55-26:57

Darren, you remember the year, Harn City High School.

    26:58-26:59

    We were gremlins, right?

    27:00-27:01

Do you remember the year of the protests?

    27:03-27:04

I think I was in junior high.

    27:04-27:05

Were you still in high school?

    27:05-27:08

Like you were what, sophomore, junior?

    27:08-27:08

    What were you?

    27:09-27:10

    You're probably a junior.

    27:10-27:17

Okay, well, when we were, however many years ago that was, at our high school, they had these protests.

    27:18-27:25

And I don't even know how it started, but a couple of students were sideways about something and they're like, "We're gonna march around the school all day.

    27:25-27:35

We're just gonna walk out of school and we're gonna march." And then a couple other students were like, "Hey, no class, let's go." So here's this parade of students.

    27:36-27:40

And then some other students, remember this throughout the day, first period, here goes some second period.

    27:40-27:47

Some students are like, "Why am I sitting in here "when they're all out there? Let's go." And so there's this parade of people marching around.

    27:47-27:51

And so next thing you know, it's Pittsburgh.

    27:53-27:54

    So what happens next?

    27:54-27:55

    Channel 11 News shows up.

    27:56-27:58

They're sticking microphones in all these students.

    27:58-28:00

I remember this clear as day.

    28:00-28:03

They're sticking microphones in students' faces and I watched it on the news that night.

    28:04-28:08

And we have all these students walking around, we're protesting, we're protesting, we're protesting.

    28:08-28:09

And I know you're asking, did I protest?

    28:10-28:11

    No, I didn't go out.

    28:11-28:12

    Why?

    28:12-28:14

Well, first of all, I'm lazy.

    28:16-28:18

I was looking out the window.

    28:18-28:20

I'm like, it seems like a lot of walking.

    28:22-28:27

Another reason is there were only like five people in my classes, so the teachers didn't do anything.

    28:27-28:30

The teachers were like, "We're not having class "'cause there's nobody here." So I'm like, "Woo-hoo, I'm just gonna sit here.

    28:32-28:41

"Look at all the people walking." But there was another reason I didn't go out, was I didn't have anything to protest.

    28:42-28:45

Like, I don't know what everybody's so upset about.

    28:46-28:47

But see, that didn't stop most of the people.

    28:47-28:57

They're like, "Let's go, we're protesting." And I remember, so Channel 11 News shows up, they're sticking microphones in people's faces, And like, what are you protesting?

    28:57-29:01

And what were some of the like weird reasons they were given?

    29:01-29:03

Like I can't have a sandwich in class.

    29:03-29:06

And it was, you know, okay.

    29:07-29:12

So that was the spark that you're not allowed to eat candy bars and drink pop in class.

    29:12-29:13

    Okay, so there you go.

    29:14-29:15

    That was the reason.

    29:16-29:17

    But not everybody knew that.

    29:18-29:21

So you had all these people marching around like what are you protesting?

    29:22-29:24

    I don't know, but we're protesting!

    29:26-29:27

And that's what was happening here.

    29:27-29:34

It says there was such confusion that it says most of them did not know why they'd come together.

    29:36-29:38

See, I told the car and city story because it's funny.

    29:40-29:44

But in recent years, the riots and the protests haven't been funny, right?

    29:44-29:53

It's been destruction, people burning down, people protesting racial rights, and then they go to a black business owner and burn his business down?

    29:53-29:55

    Like, what are you doing?

    29:57-30:03

How many people that are out doing this are actually thinking about why they're even protesting?

    30:04-30:06

That's what was going on in Ephesus.

    30:06-30:07

There's nothing new under the sun, right?

    30:08-30:10

    Picking up verse 33.

    30:11-30:14

Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward.

    30:15-30:20

And Alexander, motioning with his hand, He wanted to make a defense to the crowd.

    30:21-30:50

Okay, so, I know it's kind of hard to understand what's going on here, but basically what this is, there was a man named Alexander who was a Jew, and best understanding of this is he got up, sort of make a distinction between the Jews and the Christians to say, "Look, I know what the Christians are doing, but we're Jews and we're not with them, so just make sure you don't mix us Jews in with the Christians." And he was trying to like draw the line for everybody, like, "Hey, watch what you're doing" kind of thing.

    30:51-31:08

But look at verse 34, it says, "But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, 'Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!'" "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" For two hours.

    31:10-31:23

So here's the point, when they saw that he was Jewish, they didn't care, because a lot of people in the first century just sort of combined Christianity with Judaism.

    31:23-31:29

They thought that Christianity was sort of an offshoot of Judaism, because you've got to admit there's some similarities, right?

    31:30-31:37

God of Israel, the Torah, Abraham, Moses, all of that.

    31:38-31:40

Plus, as far as these guys were concerned, these were idol makers.

    31:41-31:44

And they knew that there were two demographics that didn't go for idols.

    31:45-31:46

    Want to guess which two?

    31:47-31:48

    Jews and Christians, right?

    31:49-31:50

Those people don't go for idols.

    31:52-32:05

So, they're like, "Oh, that guy's a Jew. Who cares what he says?" And for two hours, they chanted "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians." Now, when they chanted this, this wasn't like "Let's Go Pens," okay?

    32:05-32:07

    This was probably cultic.

    32:07-32:09

This was probably part of their worship.

    32:11-32:12

Could you imagine for two solid hours?

    32:12-32:14

Let's try that for two hours.

    32:14-32:17

Let's just start, I pass, right?

    32:19-32:19

    Moving on.

    32:21-32:33

Says when the town clerk, I can admit when I first read this, I like cashier at Walmart or something, but town clerk, this is actually the mayor.

    32:33-32:39

This was the person who sort of oversaw Ephesus, but he answered to Rome.

    32:40-32:41

    He's like modern day mayor.

    32:42-33:06

When the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know "that the city of the Ephesians is a temple keeper "of the great Artemis and of the sacred stone "that fell from the sky?" A lot of cults were associated with this, a meteor falls from the sky and they're like, hey, it looks like a whatever.

    33:07-33:11

And they think that the gods fired it down from the heavens.

    33:13-33:20

He goes on, Mayer here says, "Seeing then that these things "cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet "and do nothing rash.

    33:22-33:26

"For you have brought these men here "who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess.

    33:27-34:21

"If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen him have a complaint against anyone the courts are open and there are pro counsels let them bring charges against one another if you seek anything further it shall be settled in a regular assembly for we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion and when he had said these things he dismissed the assembly okay so the mayor gets up he goes look guys Rome is gonna be really ticked off if they hear that we are riding these men are not criminal they're not insulting they're not improper in any way look if you have a problem take it to court go through due process make it a legal matter if you We really have a criminal complaint.

    34:22-34:24

We don't want problems with Rome.

    34:25-34:31

And see, this passage, I've got to be honest with you, you go through the book of Acts and you get to this passage, it's a little weird.

    34:33-34:36

Because when the riot starts, you expect some heroics from God.

    34:36-34:38

Let's be honest, you expect heroics from God.

    34:38-34:41

He's going to send an angel, like prison break, like we saw with Peter, right?

    34:41-35:00

Or He's going to send some apostle to preach in mass conversion and speaking in tongues, And you're expecting God to do some super spiritual intervention, but really what we see in this part of the passage we just read is just simply this.

    35:00-35:11

Paul was protected by the Asiarchs, these pagan friends of his, and the riot was stopped by a secular government official.

    35:13-35:17

And as we've gone through Acts, we've seen that persecution does indeed come from the world.

    35:18-35:20

That's been like every chapter in the book of Acts.

    35:21-35:22

    Persecution, persecution, persecution.

    35:22-35:30

But sometimes, this is important, sometimes, as we see in this passage, here it is.

    35:31-35:38

A Christian's testimony can bring favor from non-Christians.

    35:40-35:47

a Christian's testimony, and bring favor from non-Christians.

    35:49-36:08

You see, there's a phrase that we like to say, I think it makes us sound macho, it makes us sound very independent and strong, but I hear people say this a lot, people say, "You know, I don't care what people think about me." You ever heard somebody say that? "I don't really care what people think about me." And so I mow my lawn in short shorts and a Def Leppard t-shirt.

    36:08-36:10

I don't care what people think about me.

    36:12-36:16

    I don't. That's what my wife says.

    36:18-36:19

I don't care what people think about me.

    36:21-36:21

    You should.

    36:22-36:24

    Getting aside, you totally should.

    36:26-36:27

    It's immature.

    36:27-36:32

It's immature to have this attitude that you really don't give a rip what people think about you.

    36:32-36:34

Why? Because first of all, you represent Jesus Christ.

    36:35-36:39

Someone is forming an opinion about Jesus because they're watching you.

    36:41-36:46

You're like, "I don't care what people think about me." You should, ambassador of Christ.

    36:47-36:49

Here's the second reason from this passage.

    36:50-36:52

God may choose to use non-believers to bless you.

    36:54-36:58

That's why Paul told Titus, Titus 2, verses 7 and 8.

    36:59-37:09

He says, "Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame." Look at this last phrase.

    37:10-37:20

"Having nothing evil to say about us." The Bible calls this being blameless.

    37:22-37:27

Another expression from God's Word is living above reproach.

    37:27-37:30

Now, this doesn't mean perfect, okay?

    37:30-37:35

I'm not saying, "Oh, you go out and be perfect this week." Like who would qualify for that?

    37:37-37:41

Most of us, especially me, we would fail before we got out of the parking lot today.

    37:42-37:43

The Bible's not saying be perfect.

    37:43-37:45

Blameless and perfect are two different things.

    37:47-37:53

Blameless is having a reputation for always striving to do the right thing.

    37:54-37:55

    That's being blameless.

    37:56-38:05

to illustrate it this way, it's when your co-worker says, you know, I may not agree with his beliefs, but I've never heard him speak poorly about someone.

    38:07-38:09

You know, I've never heard him tell an off-color joke.

    38:11-38:14

I've never heard her gossip behind somebody's back.

    38:16-38:21

You know, he always seems respectful, not only to the people that work under him, but also to his bosses.

    38:23-38:24

    She's always hardworking.

    38:25-38:27

She's always looking out for other people.

    38:30-38:32

You know, when he messes up, he fixes it.

    38:33-38:38

You know, when she wronged someone, she apologizes, that's living blamelessly.

    38:40-38:48

And that's the person that's going to come to your aid when you least expect it.

    38:50-38:57

As we close, if the worship team would make their way up, I want you to look at the floors, not the carpet.

    38:57-38:58

    Look at the tile.

    39:00-39:02

Like I've never had a pastor ask me to do that.

    39:04-39:06

I don't mean bow your heads and pray.

    39:06-39:07

We're gonna do that in a second.

    39:07-39:09

Look at the tile with your eyes open.

    39:10-39:10

    Look at it.

    39:12-39:14

I wanna tell you a story about these tile floors.

    39:17-39:26

Did you know, a couple of Thursdays ago, I think it was, You know, we spent the last five and a half years renting Marshall Middle School.

    39:28-39:32

And they weren't excited about having a church meet there when we first went.

    39:34-39:43

In fact, their exact words were, "You have three months, and if you mess up even one time, you are out of here." That was back in 2011.

    39:45-39:47

What does that have to do with these floors?

    39:47-39:56

Well, a couple of Thursdays ago, Three of the custodians from Marshall Middle School were working.

    39:56-39:58

They punched out at 11 PM.

    40:00-40:11

And they showed up at these doors at 11, 15 PM with floor scrubbing machines and mops and buckets and extra mop heads.

    40:13-40:19

And they spent-- what was it-- Five and a half hours.

    40:23-40:26

Yeah, we left at like somewhere between 4.30 and 5 a.m.

    40:27-40:34

They spent five and a half hours cleaning these floors that may not have ever been touched since they were first put down.

    40:37-40:43

Now, what would motivate the custodians from the school where we met for five and a half years?

    40:43-40:54

What would motivate them to come after working a full shift and spend an entire night joyfully scrubbing floors.

    40:56-40:58

It wasn't because they were members of the church.

    41:00-41:05

It wasn't because they felt some sort of obligation, like, well, they kind of did for us, so we got to kind of do for them.

    41:06-41:08

And it wasn't as if they were paid.

    41:10-41:12

You know what motivated them to do that?

    41:13-41:16

    Your reputation with them.

    41:17-41:18

    That's what motivated them.

    41:19-41:20

And I want to commend you for that.

    41:22-41:35

I could think of a thousand other scenarios where the staff of the school where we would meet or a church would meet would say, so long, best of luck to you.

    41:35-41:40

But to have the staff of the school say, we want to bless you, how can we bless you?

    41:42-41:47

That speaks much of your reputation and the love that you have shown them.

    41:48-41:51

So church, you have a choice.

    41:53-41:55

You have a choice this week.

    41:56-41:58

You have a choice this month.

    41:58-41:59

    You have a choice today.

    42:00-42:05

And your choice is simply between two things - destruction or protection.

    42:08-42:23

Because as we see in this passage, when the light of Jesus Christ shines through you, And when you seek to live a blameless life, God will bring protection to you through some of the most unexpected means, even people who don't know Him.

    42:25-42:40

Or, speaking of protection, is your obsession with you protecting your money and your stuff, like Demetrius, that brings destruction.

    42:41-42:42

    What do you want?

    42:44-42:45

    Do you want destruction?

    42:46-42:46

    Or do you want protection?

    42:48-42:56

Because the Bible says, a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches.

    42:57-43:02

And favor is better than silver or gold.

    43:03-43:04

I'm going to bow my head.

    43:04-43:05

I want you to bow your heads and pray with me.

    43:06-43:23

We're going to have some of our prayer team members back by the giant sign in the corner that says "pray." While we sing this closing song, if you need prayer for any reason, maybe it's not even for yourself, maybe you want to pray for somebody else, I'd encourage you to go back and somebody back there will be thrilled.

    43:24-43:27

Lift up whatever you need before the Lord.

    43:28-43:31

Father in heaven, we thank you for your Word.

    43:33-43:45

God, I thank You that Your Word isn't some imaginative fantasy of some spiritual guy wanting to say flowery things.

    43:45-43:50

We have a Holy Spirit inspired historical account that just tells it like it is.

    43:51-43:55

We get to a passage like this, Father, and we see that You work in very unexpected ways.

    43:56-44:01

Even using pagans and the mayor to protect Paul and to stop a riot.

    44:04-44:10

Father, I pray, first of all, for my brothers and sisters here, I pray for our name and for our reputation.

    44:12-44:25

When we go to our workplaces and to be with our families, and we go into our neighborhoods, Father, when people know that we represent Jesus Christ, when people know that we would call ourselves Christians, they're watching, Father.

    44:26-44:32

I pray that they wouldn't see self-righteousness or hypocrisy.

    44:34-44:36

I pray they would see blamelessness in us.

    44:38-44:43

Father, I pray against the worship of money.

    44:44-45:00

I pray, Father, that as a church, we would use money to advance Your kingdom as You've told us to do, but that we wouldn't become so obsessed protecting our own little pile of stuff that we bring pain upon others and bring pain upon ourselves.

    45:03-45:07

Let your Holy Spirit shine His light in the dark places of our hearts now.

    45:10-45:14

Let us leave here convicted and changed.

    45:15-45:18

We pray in Jesus' name, amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 19:21-41

  1. How can you tell if YOU YOURSELF have made money an idol in your life? What are the signs? What should you do if you have the signs?

  2. What are ways the church today gets involved with idols? How can we be done with them?

  3. The town clerk, or "mayor" (Acts 19:35-41) stopped the riot. Should Christians use the government for protection / advancing the kingdom? To what extent?

  4. "I don't care what other people think about me!" Is this a Christian attitude? Why or why not?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for your witness and testimony to reflect Christ.
Pray for favor from even your non-believing friends who see Christ in you.
Pray that any persecution that comes is because of the Gospel, not your personality.

  • 00:59-01:02

Open up your Bibles with me, please, to the book of 1 Kings.

    01:02-01:04

We're going to be in chapter 8.

    01:04-01:10

And if you do not have a Bible, there are some in the pockets, in the seats in front of you, and you can totally keep that.

    01:10-01:12

If you don't have a Bible, that is yours.

    01:13-01:16

And if we run out of them in the rows, I know there's more back in the guest reception.

    01:20-01:26

While you're turning there, how many people here have been down to this restaurant just down the street called Ditkitz?

    01:26-01:27

How many people have been there? Show of hands.

    01:28-01:29

Okay, a lot of you have.

    01:29-01:36

All right, well, I went there exactly one time, and it was, Greg Hederman, it was for your bachelor party.

    01:36-01:37

And that was a good night, wasn't it?

    01:38-01:50

Yeah, and I remember while we were at Ditka's, I was talking to a couple of the servers, and I said, "Has Mike Ditka ever been here?

    01:50-01:56

Has he visited here?" And you could tell instantly, that was a really big deal to them.

    01:57-02:08

Their eyes lit up and they said, "Well, you know, he was supposed to come here last June, but some things happened, and now they're thinking maybe in October he's gonna be here." And it was obviously a big deal.

    02:09-02:11

And I just couldn't contain myself.

    02:11-02:16

I kept thinking about, do you remember that old sketch on TV with those Chicago guys?

    02:16-02:18

They'd be like, "Dah, bears!" Do you remember that?

    02:18-02:20

How many people remember, "Dah, bears!" Okay, go ahead and say that.

    02:21-02:28

"Dah, bears!" - Wasn't it just fun to say, "Dah, bears!" And they were so excited.

    02:28-02:40

They were so excited at the thought that someday Mike Ditka was going to come and be in that restaurant.

    02:41-02:44

But in the meantime, they had a nice place.

    02:45-02:46

    They had great food.

    02:46-02:53

They got the logos, the image of Ditka on the sign, the branding, and the staff takes care of business.

    02:53-02:57

but the guy himself wasn't there.

    02:58-02:59

I was thinking about that a lot this week.

    03:02-03:04

Sort of like the church a lot of times, isn't it?

    03:05-03:07

That we can have God's name attached to it.

    03:08-03:13

We can have images and branding and logos that sort of remind us.

    03:15-03:17

We can take care of business with our staff.

    03:18-03:19

And we can talk a lot about them.

    03:20-03:24

And we can even be excited at the thought that He might come someday.

    03:27-03:31

But the question is, is God there? Is God present?

    03:32-03:34

Is God actually at the church?

    03:35-03:41

Do we have the anticipation and excitement of God showing up?

    03:43-03:47

Not maybe once a year, but weekly.

    03:48-03:52

We're not the first portable church that moved into a permanent home.

    03:53-03:56

The first one was actually during Old Testament times.

    03:56-03:58

This passage we're going to look at.

    03:59-04:05

You see, under Moses, Israel built a tabernacle.

    04:05-04:06

    And what was a tabernacle?

    04:06-04:11

Well, the tabernacle was this place of worship where God's glory was manifested.

    04:11-04:16

If you know a little bit about Moses' story, they were traveling through the wilderness.

    04:16-04:50

tabernacle had to constantly be torn down and set back up, torn down, set back up constantly as they traveled. They were the first portable church, right? Well when you get to the time of King David, you know, Israel was in the nation, in their land rather, and David said to Nathan the prophet, "I dwell in a house of cedar." This is in 2 Samuel chapter 7 verse 2. David says, "I dwell in a house "of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent." That really bothered David.

    04:50-04:56

David said, "I have this really nice house, "but God sort of lives in a tent.

    04:56-05:03

"Like this just doesn't seem right." And David had this idea that he wanted to build God a house, but he wasn't allowed.

    05:04-05:11

And the reason was, the Lord said that David was a man who shed much blood.

    05:11-05:13

    That's 1 Chronicles 22.

    05:14-05:21

David wasn't allowed to build the temple, but his son Solomon built the temple.

    05:23-05:35

I have to wonder if he gave any press conferences saying things like, "We're going to get cheaters from Lebanon, and Lebanon's going to pay for it." That's not in the Bible.

    05:36-05:38

But it's a completion of the temple.

    05:38-05:44

They brought the Ark of the Covenant in, And Solomon had this prayer of dedication over the temple.

    05:44-05:49

Okay, so in the Bible we have portable church went to permanent place.

    05:49-05:55

And I thought, what a great way to start our first ever service here in our new place.

    05:57-06:03

So I'd just like to echo some of the things that Solomon said in his prayer.

    06:03-06:05

We're just gonna look at part of verses 22 through 30.

    06:06-06:15

So on your outline, a prayer for harvest Bible chapel, May our new home be, first of all, number one, a place where we recognize God's goodness.

    06:16-06:18

Look at verses 22 and 23.

    06:18-06:54

And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven and said, "Oh Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you We're going to call this a place where we study the Bible.

    06:54-06:57

Look at verses 24 through 26.

    06:59-07:05

Solomon continues, "Who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him.

    07:06-07:18

You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it to this day." "Now therefore, O Lord God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father what you have promised him." Do you see a theme here?

    07:18-07:32

"What you have promised, what you have promised, what you have promised." "Saying, 'You shall not lack a man to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me as you have walked before me.

    07:32-07:52

Now therefore, O God of Israel," look at this next phrase, "Let your word be confirmed, which you have spoken to your servant David, my father." "Let your word be confirmed." So Solomon was all about the Word of God.

    07:52-07:56

So a prayer for Harvest Bible Chapel, number two, is a place where we study the Bible.

    07:57-08:01

Number three, a place where we say our prayers.

    08:03-08:12

"May harvest Bible chapel, may our new home be a place, may this room be a place where we say our prayers." Look at verses 27-30.

    08:14-08:28

"Will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built." He says, "God, You're bigger than the known universe.

    08:29-08:41

How can I even think that we contain You in this house?" He says, "Yet, have regard to the prayer of Your servant and to his plea.

    08:42-09:08

O Lord my God, listening to the cry and to the prayer that Your servant prays before You this day, that Your eyes may be opened night and day "For this house, the place which you have said, 'My name shall be there,' that you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers for this place." So this should be a place where we say our prayers.

    09:09-09:18

And finally, number four, "May this be a place where grace is valued." Look at verse 30.

    09:18-09:36

"Listen to the plea of your servant, Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place, and listen, in heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.

    09:39-09:41

A place where grace is valued, Solomon says.

    09:41-09:47

God, you're going to have people praying, and when they pray, Father, forgive.

    09:49-09:54

So if you look at your outline of this list, you think this is a pretty good list.

    09:56-09:57

You think this is a good list?

    09:59-10:00

Like, man, that sermon went fast.

    10:03-10:04

    Well, here's the problem.

    10:05-10:06

    Here's the problem.

    10:06-10:07

    It is a good list.

    10:07-10:17

It is a good list, but that in itself is the problem because it's not God's best, honestly, it's not.

    10:19-10:26

See, when you look at this list on your outline, let's be honest, these are all things that we can pull off ourselves, right?

    10:27-10:29

We don't need God for these things, do we?

    10:30-10:38

We can recognize God's goodness, we can study the Bible, we can say our prayers, we can value grace, we can do that ourselves.

    10:38-10:40

We don't need God for those things.

    10:43-10:50

Because of that, when we look at this list, church, we can't be okay to settle for this.

    10:51-11:04

We can't be okay to look at this list and say, "Yeah, good enough. That's good. That's good. That works." Because that is not what God wants for His church.

    11:06-11:07

    Like the Ditka restaurant.

    11:09-11:10

Are we okay to pay tribute?

    11:12-11:14

It doesn't matter if he's here or not?

    11:17-11:29

Or should we be content with nothing less than God showing up and doing the things that only God can do?

    11:31-11:46

You want to be a part of a church where you can say, "Look what the people did!" Or do you want to be a part of a church where you say, "Look what God did!" That's the church that I want to be a part of.

    11:47-11:48

So here's what we're going to do.

    11:48-11:50

We're going to take another run at this outline.

    11:51-11:54

And I encourage you, there's pens in your seat if you need a pencil.

    11:55-11:56

I usually have one or two.

    11:57-11:57

    You can borrow one.

    11:59-12:00

    But you have permission.

    12:00-12:05

I want you to scratch out each point, and we're going to rewrite them more appropriately.

    12:06-12:06

    You with me?

    12:07-12:12

Scratch out the points in your outline, and we're going to rewrite them more appropriately.

    12:13-12:17

So here's a prayer for Harvest Bible Chapel, for real this time.

    12:18-12:21

Number one, a place where we recognize God's goodness?

    12:21-12:22

    No.

    12:22-12:22

    Scratch that out.

    12:23-12:27

A place where we worship God from the heart.

    12:28-12:37

There's a difference between recognizing that God is good and worshiping God because He He is good. Do you see the difference?

    12:38-12:43

See, when it comes to worship, there's some people that just don't get it.

    12:44-12:47

And I know worship is more than just singing, but worship includes singing, right?

    12:47-12:48

    Biggest book in the Bible?

    12:49-12:50

What's the biggest book in the Bible?

    12:51-12:53

    Psalms, right? Israel's songbook.

    12:54-12:57

Congregational singing of adoration to the Lord.

    12:57-12:59

That's obviously very important to God.

    13:01-13:02

And some people don't get it.

    13:03-13:07

Some people just show up and they say, Some people say, "I can't wait till the music part's over," or whatever.

    13:08-13:16

Other people say, "I can't wait till the sermon part's over." We pray for those people, but some people...

    13:16-13:18

What's the big deal? Worship's going on.

    13:18-13:19

I've seen people stand with their arms folded.

    13:19-13:20

    Have you ever seen this?

    13:20-13:23

People stand with their arms folded during worship time, they have their head down.

    13:23-13:25

And look, if that's you, I'm not judging you.

    13:25-13:30

I'm just saying, maybe you don't get what worship is about.

    13:31-13:32

    Look at verse 23.

    13:33-13:35

I'll show you from God's Word what worship is about.

    13:36-13:37

    Look at verse 23 again.

    13:38-13:46

Solomon says, "O Lord God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath." In what way, Solomon? Here it is.

    13:47-14:07

"Keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their hearts." He says, "God, you promise and you give enduring love." That's awesome! And who do you give this to? Do you see the word?

    14:07-14:12

He says, "To your servants." You realize God owes you nothing.

    14:13-14:17

He owes you nothing, yet He gives you everything.

    14:19-14:23

God owes you nothing, yet He chose to enter into a covenant with you.

    14:26-14:29

not the covenant of the Old Testament, it's the covenant of the blood of Jesus Christ.

    14:29-14:31

We're going to talk about that in a few minutes.

    14:32-14:38

But God loves you, and He chose to enter into covenant with you.

    14:40-15:03

And until you really grasp how significant it is that the holy, almighty, sovereign of the universe would choose to reach out and extend his promises and his love to us, until you really grasp that you're not going to get worship, you're not going to get what all the singing and excitement is about.

    15:06-15:10

So I'm like, how can I possibly illustrate this concept?

    15:10-15:17

And there's nothing that you can compare God to, so it's hard to have a perfect illustration for this, but this is the closest I was thinking of.

    15:17-15:25

Have you ever been sitting in your office at work or whatever, sitting at home on the couch or whatever, and there's a fly in the room, right?

    15:26-15:29

And where does the fly typically like to hang out?

    15:30-15:31

    Right around your face, right?

    15:31-15:32

    Anybody else or just me?

    15:32-15:33

    OK.

    15:33-15:34

    [FLY BUZZING]

    15:34-15:38

So many times I'm sitting at my desk trying to type, there's one fly in the room.

    15:38-15:39

    [FLY BUZZING]

    15:39-15:42

And you have the whole room.

    15:42-15:44

And proportionately, that's pretty good for you.

    15:45-15:46

    You have this whole room.

    15:46-15:56

and I'm swatting and I'm swinging Bibles at him, and I'm like, "Lord, forgive me for that." And I get annoyed to the point that it becomes an obsession.

    15:57-15:57

    I kid you not.

    15:57-16:08

I'll shut the door, and I'll find something legitimate, like a concordance or something, and the hardback, MacArthur Study Bible, something.

    16:10-16:15

I'm like, I'm not just going to kill this fly, I'm going to atomize it, and nothing else happens.

    16:16-16:19

Sermon prep, prayer time, shame on me.

    16:20-16:23

Nothing else happens until this thing is destroyed.

    16:23-16:27

He's annoyed me, and now I'm going to kill him.

    16:29-16:32

That sounded a lot worse coming out of my mouth than it did in my head.

    16:32-16:34

Just give me a second here to readjust.

    16:36-16:38

And to my shame, there have been times that I wasn't able to get the fly.

    16:39-16:40

    I just wasn't able to.

    16:40-16:45

So I have this idea that I'm just going to shut the door I hope that he's going to suffocate in my office.

    16:45-16:45

    I don't know.

    16:45-16:46

I'm going to shut him in.

    16:47-16:48

I'm going to shut him in.

    16:48-16:50

And the fly's just like, see you tomorrow.

    16:52-16:52

    Right?

    16:54-16:55

    So kill him.

    16:58-16:59

    Shut him in the room.

    17:01-17:02

    I have some options.

    17:02-17:09

But you know, I would never think-- I would never think-- it's never crossed my mind to choose to love that fly.

    17:11-17:14

It has never crossed my mind to enter into a covenant with that fly.

    17:16-17:25

It has never entered my mind to somehow fundamentally transform the very nature of this fly and be a father to that fly.

    17:25-17:27

Those thoughts have never crossed my mind.

    17:28-17:37

And do you know, to God, let's just be honest, we're less than a fly in comparison to the majesty of God.

    17:37-17:40

You are a handful of dirt and a lot of water.

    17:40-17:41

    That's what you're made of.

    17:42-17:50

And compared to the sovereign of the universe, we're less than a fly, and we're more than annoying to him.

    17:51-17:52

    We are rebellious.

    17:54-18:04

Yet, he loves, he loves to be the heavenly father of those who seek him.

    18:06-18:11

And when you can wrap your brain around that, and you can worship God from the heart.

    18:13-18:18

Number two, may our new home be a place where we study the Bible.

    18:18-18:19

Now you can scratch that out.

    18:20-18:23

Well, Bible study is good, all for Bible study, but that's a little short.

    18:24-18:31

So we're gonna rephrase that, write this down, embrace God's promises, embrace God's promises.

    18:33-18:39

There's a huge difference between knowing about a promise and claiming it.

    18:41-18:46

There's a huge difference between having the knowledge of a promise and living out that promise.

    18:47-18:48

    What's the difference?

    18:49-18:49

    Here's the difference.

    18:50-18:57

If I said to you, "Hey, Dairy Queen is giving out ice cream." Now you have information, you have knowledge.

    18:59-19:05

But that is completely different than driving to Dairy Queen and getting some ice cream.

    19:06-19:08

I don't know if they're giving out free ice cream.

    19:08-19:09

    That was just an illustration.

    19:10-19:10

    Okay?

    19:11-19:18

But do you see the difference between, I know something in my head now, there's a fact, there's a fact that this particular ice cream establishment is giving out ice cream.

    19:19-19:25

That's different than I get in my car and I drive up to get the ice cream.

    19:27-19:31

That's the difference between studying the Bible and embracing God's promises.

    19:32-19:33

    See, there's a difference.

    19:34-19:37

We can look at a more serious illustration.

    19:37-19:48

There's a difference between knowing that there is a heaven and embracing the promise that Jesus Christ is preparing a place for me there.

    19:49-19:50

    You see the difference?

    19:52-20:11

There's a difference between acknowledging the spiritual address somewhere, "I think there's a heaven, I believe there is," versus "Jesus died to give me access to this place." He said right now, He is preparing this place for me.

    20:13-20:14

    Yeah, study the Bible.

    20:15-20:16

    Yeah, know the Bible.

    20:18-20:20

But knowing the facts isn't the end game.

    20:20-20:23

The end game is when the Word of God shapes your life.

    20:24-20:28

Living like we believe every single promise in His Word.

    20:30-20:32

That's what we pray for Harvest Bible Chapel.

    20:34-20:35

    That God would continue.

    20:37-20:52

again, verse 26, "Now therefore, O God of Israel, let your word be confirmed." And Solomon's saying, "Confirm it. We know your word is true, God, and we are going to watch you bring the fulfillment of it." That's what we're praying for this church.

    20:53-21:09

Number three, we said, "May Harvest Bible Chapel be a place where we say our prayers." And you can go ahead and scratch that out, and instead let's say Harvest The first Bible chapel is a place where we pray with expectation.

    21:11-21:12

    Look at verse 27 again.

    21:14-21:16

He says, "But will God indeed dwell in the earth?

    21:19-21:27

Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, how much less this house that I have built." He's saying God cannot be boxed in, right?

    21:28-21:30

    He's uncontainable.

    21:30-21:34

God's not like your pet that you put on a leash, and that's where He stays.

    21:35-21:38

We have an aquarium and here's where he's contained.

    21:38-21:42

Solomon's like, "I know even building this house, you're bigger.

    21:43-21:48

And nothing can contain you." But then look at verse 29.

    21:50-22:07

He says, "That your eyes may be open night and day toward this house, the place of which you have said, 'My name shall be there.'" God says, "I want My name attached to that place." And obviously it was more than just a sign.

    22:07-22:32

It was, "This is the place where God resides." "That you may listen to the prayer that your servant offers toward this place." So God cannot be boxed in, but He wanted this place on earth so that God could, in a sense, rule in the midst of His people.

    22:32-22:37

Meaning, God wants to be known, God wants to be present with His people to meet their needs.

    22:37-22:38

    You see?

    22:39-22:46

The temple can't contain God, but it became obviously more than a symbol.

    22:46-22:51

But it was a symbol that God wants to actually be in the presence of His people.

    22:52-22:53

    That is awesome!

    22:55-23:04

So I want to encourage us, church, let this be a place where people cry out, where people pray in at least three ways.

    23:06-23:07

First of all, jot these down.

    23:07-23:09

I just want to encourage you in your prayer life.

    23:09-23:11

I encourage you, first of all, be specific.

    23:12-23:14

    Be specific in your prayers.

    23:14-23:16

We've all been guilty of this.

    23:17-23:19

I've been guilty of this, and I'm sure you have too.

    23:20-23:22

But sometimes we say some silly things when we pray.

    23:24-23:35

And sometimes we say things like, "God, I pray for Ben." And God's like, I just imagine God's like, "Okay, "what are you praying for Ben for?

    23:35-23:36

    "Like what, what?

    23:37-23:41

"Saying I pray for Ben is just an acknowledgement "of what you're currently doing, right?

    23:42-23:43

    "That's not very specific.

    23:45-23:51

"You know, God, I just pray for the service today." You pray for what for the service today?

    23:51-23:53

What would you like to see happen?

    23:54-23:56

Or we say things like, you know, God bless grandma.

    23:57-23:58

    God bless grandma.

    24:00-24:01

You've all done this, God bless grandma.

    24:02-24:03

    And like, how?

    24:05-24:09

Does grandma have a major health issue or does grandma need a coupon for Arby's?

    24:09-24:11

    Like what, bless grandma how?

    24:13-24:15

And I've been so guilty of this.

    24:15-24:17

I've been so guilty of this.

    24:18-24:19

    God, we say, be with.

    24:20-24:21

God, be with my kids at school today.

    24:22-24:26

God, be with so-and-so on their mission trip.

    24:26-24:30

And it's kind of like the pray for, what do you mean by that?

    24:30-24:31

    Be with them how?

    24:31-24:37

Because if they're a believer in Christ, Christ promised I'll never leave or forsake, and we know that He is going to be with them.

    24:37-24:39

So what are we praying for exactly?

    24:40-24:43

So can you see, we can be a little more specific in what we're asking God for.

    24:44-24:49

And we could spend a whole sermon series talking about that, but we are not going to do that right now.

    24:50-24:53

The Bible very clearly teaches that we should be specific.

    24:54-24:57

Also, we should be, as we said, we should be expectant.

    24:59-25:00

Expect that we should pray with expectation.

    25:02-25:05

We know that God is hearing and that God will be moving.

    25:06-25:08

That's why the Bible tells us to pray and to watch.

    25:09-25:13

Sometimes we pray and go about our business not being mindful of how God's moving.

    25:13-25:21

We kind of throw it out there like, OK, God, you know, God, I pray for Ben and bless Grandma and be with Russ.

    25:21-25:21

    Amen.

    25:21-25:22

and we just go about our business.

    25:24-25:28

And when we do that, we are saying our prayers, but we're not praying.

    25:31-25:36

Bible says we should be praying specifically, and we should be watching, being watchful in prayer.

    25:37-25:42

We should be watching, see how God's moving, how he's responding to these specific prayers.

    25:43-25:46

And be dependent in your prayer.

    25:48-25:49

    Be dependent in your prayer.

    25:50-25:51

Prayer isn't giving God his marching orders.

    25:52-25:53

    Remember Jesus Christ's example.

    25:54-25:58

"Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me." Next line, please.

    25:58-26:02

"Nevertheless, not my will, but your will be done." Right?

    26:02-26:06

And we should always have that in prayer, because who knows more, God or me?

    26:07-26:08

    God, right?

    26:08-26:13

So when I pray, I don't have the audacity to think that I'm going to set God straight on some things.

    26:14-26:26

I want to cooperate with his will, knowing that he's the sovereign, he's the all-knowing, He's the Almighty, so if I want something that is contrary to what God wants, then I'm going to yield to His will.

    26:27-26:31

So we should be dependent upon His sovereignty.

    26:32-26:40

The Prayer for Harvest Bible Chapel, Maryknoop, New Home B, a place where we worship God from the heart, where we embrace God's promises, where we pray with expectation.

    26:41-26:45

And finally, a place where grace is valued.

    26:47-26:48

You can go ahead and scratch that out.

    26:50-26:54

How about a place where grace is lived and proclaimed?

    26:56-27:09

Look at the last word, verse 30, the word "forgive." The word "forgive." We're going to close our time today, gathering around the Lord's table.

    27:11-27:28

And in verse 63 in this passage, you And I know that at the conclusion of this prayer of dedication, Solomon offered a peace offering to God, which included 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep.

    27:29-27:31

We are not going to do that today.

    27:33-27:33

    Why?

    27:35-27:37

Because the property manager is going to be mad?

    27:37-27:38

No, that's not really the reason.

    27:39-27:40

Why? Because it's going to be messy?

    27:40-27:41

    No, that's not the reason.

    27:42-27:44

Because we don't have 120,000 sheep?

    27:44-27:46

We'd get them if we needed to.

    27:46-27:47

But none of those are the reason.

    27:47-27:55

The reason that we're not going to be offering animal sacrifices today is because there are no more sacrifices to be made.

    27:57-28:06

Jesus Christ laid down His life for us, once for all, so that our sins can be forgiven.

    28:08-28:21

Not only must we let this truth transform us, we must get the word out about the kind of grace that comes from this incomparable God.

    28:23-28:31

So today, as we have a building dedication, really it's not what you think it is.

    28:33-28:34

    Because this isn't God's temple.

    28:36-28:37

This room is not God's temple.

    28:40-28:47

Some insurance agency was using it before us, and somebody is going to be using it long after we're gone.

    28:49-28:53

Marshall Middle School Auditorium was not the temple of God.

    28:54-28:58

Because of the finished work of Jesus Christ, what does the Bible say about God's temple?

    28:59-29:01

Everybody point to where God's temple is.

    29:01-29:02

    It's right here, isn't it?

    29:05-29:06

    Your body.

    29:08-29:14

If you've received Christ as your Lord and Savior, the Bible says your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

    29:16-29:33

So we're not saying today, "God, we want you to come and live in this room." We're saying, "God, be powerful in me." And when God's people assemble here, We will see God do some amazing things.

    29:35-29:42

We're going to celebrate that forgiveness and that transformation right now as we gather around the Lord's table.

    29:44-29:48

I'd like to remind you, you don't have to be a member of our church to receive the Lord's Supper.

    29:49-29:52

You have to be a born-again believer in Jesus Christ.

    29:53-29:59

And if that's you, He invites you around his table.

    30:01-30:08

The Bible tells us that on the night that Jesus was betrayed, he took bread and he broke it, and he gave thanks.

    30:09-30:14

He said, "This is my body, which is broken for you.

    30:15-30:34

Eat this in remembrance of me." The Bible says that after the meal, Jesus took the cup, And he said, "This is the blood, my blood, of the new covenant which is poured out for the forgiveness of sins.

    30:36-30:42

Drink this in remembrance of me." Thank you for diving into God's Word with us today.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read 1 Kings 8:22-30

  1. How do you know God is active in a church? What are the signs?

  2. What is the significance of Solomon’s repeated use of the name "God of Israel"?

  3. What's the difference between "saying your prayers" and "praying"? How do you know which you are doing? How can you become a better "pray-er"?

Breakout Questions:

Pray for our church to be Christ-glorifying in our new place. Like Solomon prayed for the Temple: a place where the Word of God is believed and embraced (1 Kings 8:26) and where the people of God pray passionately (1 Kings 8:28)

Unstoppable Authenticity.

Intro / Review:

Am I Using God, or is God Using Me?

  1. Am I using God...? (Acts 19:11-16)

  2. ...Or is God using me? (Acts 19:17-20)

Four Truths You Must Embrace for True Repentance:

  • Repentance isn’t Partial.
  • Repentance isn’t Procrastinating.
  • Repentance is Pricey.
  • Repentance is Permanent.

  • Pastor Jeff:

    01:06-01:11

I wrote a verse on that platform too about where I'll be standing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:12-01:13

I took pictures, we'll get them online.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:14-01:18

But I tried to actually write it where I think I'll be standing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:20-01:21

    The verse is Romans 10.17.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:23-01:30

It says, "Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ." Amen.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:31-01:35

And if we're going to grow in our faith, it comes from where?

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:36-01:38

It comes from the Word of Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:38-01:44

So I want you to take your Bibles, and I want you to open up the book of Acts 19.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:46-01:52

While you're doing that, I would like to ask Jared Siska, if you would come up, please.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:52-01:54

He knew I was going to ask him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    01:55-02:02

As you turn to Acts chapter 19, we are following the Apostle Paul on his third missionary journey.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:04-02:10

And he went back to Ephesus where he spent a couple of years and we're gonna be talking about some things that happened there.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:10-02:12

I want you to grab that microphone, please.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:13-02:25

In our passage today, we're going to see here and just a spoiler alert, we're going to see some people that had what I like to call a name drop fail.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:25-02:26

You know what it means to name drop?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:27-02:37

When you use somebody's name, somebody of fame or potential influence, some kind of connection, I'm gonna drop their name and that's going to get me some sort of advantage.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:37-02:38

You know what I'm talking about?

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:39-02:44

When this passage today, we're going to be looking at, we see some guys that try to name drop Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:45-02:49

Like, you know, just say the name and it didn't go well for them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:49-02:51

It was a name drop fail.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:51-02:59

And I was thinking this week in my own life of some name drop fails and some stories I could tell, but then it hit me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    02:59-03:07

I'm like, I heard the greatest name drop fail story in my life from my good friend, Jared Siska.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:10-03:19

But Jared and Rachel were at our house doing premarital counseling before the big day, however many months ago that was.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:19-03:29

And he told me this story, and I'm like, dude, I could get up and tell the story, but I wouldn't do it the justice that you would give.

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:29-03:40

So would you tell our friends at Harvest Bible Chapel the story about when you got pulled over by the police and you, Jared Siska, attempted a name drop?

    Pastor Jeff:

    03:40-03:40

    Go ahead.

    Jared:

    03:42-03:43

    Little background information.

    Jared:

    03:44-03:45

    Okay, this wasn't recently.

    Jared:

    03:45-03:46

    I was 17.

    Jared:

    03:48-04:21

17, junior's driver's license, so you have a curfew. I had been out past curfew Doing the speed limit we'll say on the way home and I got pulled over Never been pulled over in my life after curfew under you know 17 Freaking out cop pulls me over. He comes up to the comes up to my truck window, and I'm sitting there Shaken. He goes, "Hi, I'm Officer So-and-so, didn't catch his name.

    Jared:

    04:23-04:31

Shaken." He looks at me, he goes, "Are you alright?" I'm like, "Yeah, yeah, I'm good." "You sure about that?" "Yeah, yeah, yeah." And then I lost it.

    Jared:

    04:32-04:49

"I'm sorry, it's after curfew, I'm only 17, yada yada yada." He goes, "Yeah, okay, okay, you sure you're alright? You're not on any drugs?" I'm like, "No." "You should be, because you're shaking real bad." Yeah, alright, thanks. So he takes my license and everything, goes back to his car, runs the numbers, comes back.

    Jared:

    04:50-05:00

He goes, "I pulled you over, you have a light out." He goes, "Why don't you hop out and take a look at it?" "Okay." Get out, marker light. Nobody gets pulled over for that, except for me.

    Jared:

    05:01-05:06

So, my last name, Cisco, comes up on the thing, right?

    Jared:

    05:07-05:18

My dad has a cousin who at the time was a chief of police somewhere and his son was also a cop in the Ross Township area where I got pulled over.

    Jared:

    05:19-05:28

He goes, "Hey, I ran your numbers here and are you related to any of the SISKAs in law enforcement?" We were. Never met them before in my life.

    Jared:

    05:29-05:45

I said, "Yeah, yeah, yeah I am." He goes, "Yeah, which ones?" He said some names. I said, "Yeah, that's my dad's cousin." And he goes, "Well, do you know any of them?" I said, "Yeah, Jason. I know Jason real well." The guy at the back of my truck as they come in twos loses it.

    Jared:

    05:46-05:54

He's laughing. I can't figure out why, you know. The cop who's talking to me starts laughing, walks away, comes back, hands me my paperwork back, and that's when I see his badge.

    Jared:

    05:55-06:06

"Jason Siska." It's like, "Oh." He goes, "Yeah, I guess I'll see you later then, huh?" Have a nice day.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:06-06:14

Name drop fail. Yeah I know uh, I know Jason Siska.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:16-06:17

    Yeah he's my

    Jared:

    06:17-06:18

    cousin.

    Jared:

    06:18-06:20

Really? I've never seen you before.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:20-06:28

Apparently you're tight. Yeah, what's that? Thank you so much for sharing that story Jared. I really appreciate that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:29-06:30

    (applause)

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:33-06:34

    Isn't that a great story?

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:35-06:36

    Name drop fail.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:36-06:40

And I thought that's a great way to introduce this text that we're looking at today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:41-06:43

We're going to see another name drop fail.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:45-06:49

And we're going to be looking at a-- really, there's just one question, one point in the sermon today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:49-06:51

We're going to divide it into two parts, though.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:51-06:54

But just one question that we're going to be examining.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:56-06:59

because we at Harvest Bible Chapel want to be an authentic church.

    Pastor Jeff:

    06:59-07:11

I don't care how big the church is, and I don't care the address of the church, even though we're excited about the address change, those aren't the things that keep me motivated for ministry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:11-07:13

The thing that I want for our church is for us to be authentic.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:15-07:21

And as we are taking some self-examination on whether we are an authentic church, we're going to ask one question today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:21-07:22

You're going to ask it of yourself.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:23-07:26

I'm going to ask it of myself, but here it is on your outline.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:26-07:27

    Am I using God?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:29-07:30

    Or is God using me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:31-07:34

So let's look at the first part of that. Am I using God?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:35-07:51

Let's look at the text. Acts chapter 19 verse 11 says, as Jay read earlier, "And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul." Okay, you want to know how to put a sermon together? Let's look at verse 11.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:52-07:53

Okay, so who was doing the work?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:55-07:55

    God was, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:56-07:58

It doesn't say that Paul was doing something.

    Pastor Jeff:

    07:58-07:59

    Who was doing something?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:00-08:00

    God, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:01-08:01

    God was doing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:02-08:04

Okay, what kind of miracles were they?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:06-08:07

    Extraordinary.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:08-08:09

Why do you think that word is used?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:10-08:16

Well, I think there are people today that wanna take some of the things in the book of Acts and say it's normal.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:16-08:19

And we should be expecting these types of miracles today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:20-08:21

Is that what the Bible says?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:21-08:25

Does the Bible say that God was doing normal, everyday acts in the life of Paul?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:25-08:27

The stuff that we're reading is what?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:28-08:28

    What does your Bible say?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:29-08:31

    It's extraordinary, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:31-08:38

This is, even for the book of Acts, it says something that Luke is like, yeah, miracles were happening, and I believe miracles happened today.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:38-08:45

And I could keep you here till Thanksgiving telling you miracles that I've witnessed the Lord performed just in my own life and my own ministry.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:46-08:48

I do believe the Lord performs miracles.

    Pastor Jeff:

    08:49-09:00

but these things that were happening here, even Luke said these were extraordinary things that he was doing by the hands of Paul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:01-09:06

And we've talked about this before in the book of Acts, when you see miracles, the purpose was to confirm the message.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:07-09:09

Hebrews 2, verses three and four talk about that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:10-09:13

The reason you see so many miracles, they didn't have a Bible, okay?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:13-09:17

It wasn't like, hey, fact check me with Romans 10, 17 here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:18-09:22

God was confirming his message through the miracles the apostles were doing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:23-09:24

    Look at verse 12.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:25-09:27

What kind of extraordinary miracles were they? Look at this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:28-09:54

"So that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them, and the evil spirits came out of them." God was doing miracles such that first of all it says even handkerchiefs that was those would have been like the headbands like the do-rags, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    09:55-10:17

So people were actually taking Paul's headbands and he was wearing while he was working Yeah, it's kind of gross when you think about it, you know his sweaty nasty dirty headband and God was using that To heal and it says his apron that would have just been you know Paul was a leather worker or a tent maker, same word in the Greek.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:17-10:23

It would have been the apron that he wore while he was working and people were taking them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:24-10:27

But notice also in verse 12, a distinction is made.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:29-10:37

Some people had diseases, those are physical diseases, you know, whether it's virus or bacteria or, you know, chronic physical diseases.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:37-10:40

    Some people had spiritual problems.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:41-10:44

at the end of verse 12, the evil spirits came out of them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:45-10:50

You know, sometimes in the church, we overemphasize one and deny the other.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:50-10:52

You know, and I've known people on both sides.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:52-10:54

    Everything's a physical thing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    10:54-11:02

You just need medicine, you just need pills, and you just need, and I think that some things are spiritual problems that can't be fixed by a pill.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:03-11:06

Then you have people on the other end that everything's a spiritual problem.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:07-11:14

And you know, if you had enough faith, you wouldn't have diabetes or MRSA or whatever if you just had enough faith.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:14-11:24

No, there are physical problems and there are spiritual problems, and there's a distinction, but the common denominator here is God is able to heal both.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:24-11:28

Amen? He's able to heal both. That's the point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:29-11:30

And He still can and He still does.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:31-11:36

But look at verses 13 through 16. This is when the story gets a little weird.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:37-11:40

Like the healing handkerchiefs weren't weird enough, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:41-11:48

It says, "Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists." Let's just stop right there.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:50-11:51

You think that was on their business card?

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:52-11:54

    Hi, my name's Josiah.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:54-11:56

    I'm a itinerant Jewish exorcist.

    Pastor Jeff:

    11:57-11:59

How long have you been a Jewish exorcist?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:00-12:00

    (stammering)

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:00-12:01

    Itinerant.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:03-12:04

    Undertook, here it is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:04-12:05

Here's the name drop fail, you ready?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:06-12:42

undertook to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits saying I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims Okay, so Pete here's what was going on these occultic magicians were watching God do things through Paul you know, how's he doing that and The answer was one word Jesus. That's how Paul does it Jesus and these occultic Magicians were like, "I think I can do that." So they just, they go around and they're like, "Oh, you got a problem?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:42-12:50

Check this out." "Jesus!" And they're trying to name drop Jesus thinking that it was a trick, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:50-12:52

In those days, these magicians would have a whole bag of tricks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:53-12:55

They would buy them, they would sell them, they would trade them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    12:55-13:00

But the idea was, you have as many of these tricks in your tool bag as you can.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:00-13:02

And that's how they made their money.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:02-13:03

    It was their job.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:03-13:07

they would do these magic tricks for money.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:07-13:11

So they're like, "Oh, this is a good one." The Jesus trick.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:13-13:15

Look on in the text, it gets even weirder.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:16-13:22

Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Siva were doing this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:23-13:33

Now this, when it says that this Jewish high priest Siva, he wasn't like the Jewish high priest, there's actually no record of any high priest of Israel being named Seva.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:36-13:43

So unanimously, almost every scholar, commentator that I've read this past week said that this was probably a name that this guy adopted.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:44-13:46

You know, people still do that today, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:46-13:54

Like with ordination or doctor, you know, there's a church online, I think it's the Universal Life Church, you can go online.

    Pastor Jeff:

    13:55-14:00

And if you send a request, they'll send you a ordination that you can be a minister, just like that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:00-14:03

You don't need school, you don't need anything, You just send a request, bam, you're an ordained minister.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:04-14:06

Now, how much is that title worth, really?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:08-14:09

    Not much, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:09-14:11

But this is a good deal though.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:11-14:13

If you send them $60, they'll send you a doctorate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:16-14:18

Sounds a lot easier than school, doesn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:18-14:26

So I'm thinking about, you know, maybe for the new place, maybe it would help our street cred if you all contributed and bought me a doctorate.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:26-14:27

That would be nice of you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:28-14:29

    So we'll talk about that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:30-14:31

But obviously it doesn't mean anything, does it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:32-14:33

And I think that's what was happening here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:33-14:37

This guy had this title that he sort of put on himself.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:37-14:39

    I'm ordained Dr. So-and-so.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:40-14:42

And like nobody else recognized that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:43-14:44

    But his name was Siva.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:44-14:51

And he had these seven occultic magician sons that got in on this Jesus name dropping act.

    Pastor Jeff:

    14:52-15:00

Look at verse 15, it says, "But the evil spirit answered them." Okay, so they go up there like, "In the name of Jesus, come out." and they come upon this one guy.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:02-15:09

But the evil spirit answered them, "Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:10-15:24

But who are you?" And the man in whom was the evil spirit leapt on them, mastered all of them, and overpowered them, so that they fled out of the house naked and wounded.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:27-15:28

Did you know that story's in the Bible?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:28-15:29

    Isn't that crazy?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:30-15:34

So these, a call to magician show up like, like what were they like?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:34-15:36

I was trying to compare them this week.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:36-15:40

Imagine like if Benny Hinn meets David Blaine.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:40-15:43

That's what these guys would have been like, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:43-15:48

So they meet this demoniac who wasn't impressed at all with their show.

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:49-15:54

And this demoniac was like, you guys are pretty much all sizzle and no steak, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    15:54-16:01

And they're like, okay, we know Jesus, and we know Paul, but who are you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:02-16:04

    I'm sorry, I didn't catch the name.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:04-16:10

And let's just be honest, how lame is it if you're an occultic magician and the demons never even heard of you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:12-16:13

    Pretty lame, pretty lame.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:16-16:17

    Pretty small potatoes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:18-16:19

    So they were sent running.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:21-16:26

These seven sons go to this demoniac and they, you know, in the name of Jesus, and they're like, we don't know you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:26-16:34

And it says that he overpowered them, he beat them up and sent them running out of the house, naked and wounded.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:34-16:40

Now, how many times in the first century amongst the apostolic circle of friends and churches do you think that story got told?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:42-16:44

    Like, remember Seva?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:44-16:47

Remember that scene, I'm Dr. Seva, and I got my boys.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:47-16:53

Remember when they all got beat up by that dude, and they're running through the street bare-necked, and they had bruises all over them?

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:53-16:54

Do you remember that? Like, that was crazy!

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:56-16:57

I'm sure it got told a lot.

    Pastor Jeff:

    16:58-17:01

But you can see in this passage there's an obvious contrast.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:04-17:07

God was using Paul's headbands to heal people on one hand.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:09-17:16

And on the other hand, you have men who were invoking the name of Jesus and nothing was happening.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:17-17:22

And the difference is verse 11. It says God was using Paul.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:24-17:31

In verse 13, we see the seven sons of Siva were using God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:33-17:49

And we look at this passage and we're like, "Oh, that is such a silly passage." Imagine, imagine the audacity of somebody thinking they could invoke the name of Jesus, they could name drop Jesus for some sort of personal gain.

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:50-17:52

I mean, can you imagine the audacity?

    Pastor Jeff:

    17:52-18:01

I mean, I'm kind of using my imagination here, but that sounds very first century because things like that probably don't happen today, do they?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:03-18:06

People using the name of Jesus for personal gain.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:06-18:08

    Do people still do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:08-18:09

    Do people still do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:12-18:14

    All the time.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:15-18:18

Using the name of Jesus for personal gain.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:19-18:23

obvious application you think of the the televangelists.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:24-18:26

In the name of Jesus, send me your last dollar.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:28-18:34

While they live in houses bigger than your entire neighborhood and drive around in a fleet of luxury cars and private jets.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:36-18:41

But they need your $156 or whatever their mystical number of the week is or whatever.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:42-18:45

Using the name of Jesus for their personal gain.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:47-18:48

    But it's not just them.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:49-18:55

It's easy to sort of make application for a detached scenario.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:56-18:57

Yeah, I don't watch those guys either.

    Pastor Jeff:

    18:58-19:11

But the truth is, church, even you and I at times, let's be honest, we can be guilty of trying to manipulate God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:13-19:16

    Even by name -dropping Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:17-19:17

    We can be guilty.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:19-19:19

    Like, what do you mean?

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:20-19:41

I mean every salesman who has ever advertised himself as a Christian company, not because of some convictions or life change in his life, but because he knows that he lives in a churchy area and would attract some sales, advertising as a Christian company, you are name dropping Jesus for personal benefit.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:43-19:54

Every politician who is traveling and campaigning, claiming his Christian heritage, because he knows that will get him some votes.

    Pastor Jeff:

    19:55-19:59

You are name dropping the name of Jesus for personal gain.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:01-20:07

Everyone who's ever needed something desperately and decided I'm going to bargain with God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:08-20:15

You know, God, I'm gonna go to church And I promise you God, I'll never miss church again if you just do this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:15-20:25

And we think sometimes if we say the right things or we do the right things, that we can manipulate the Almighty into personal gain.

    Pastor Jeff:

    20:27-22:02

You know, the worst I've ever seen this, this is my opinion, the most tragic in seeing this happen is when guys, especially guys, Pretend that they're a Christian because they want to date a certain girl Erin and I can tell you stories that make make us make us weep of Guys who set up their online profile these perfect Christian men And we know ladies that this has happened to all this guy's perfect. Look at him. Look at him. He loves Jesus that was that was bait and These perfect Christian men turn out to be monsters Because there's no transformation But we named drop Jesus on our dating site Because that'll attract I'll attract the kind of girl that I want to date Name dropping Jesus for personal gain you see a lot of times people want the benefits of Jesus Not actually knowing Jesus Amen is when you think of all the benefits that Jesus Christ brings into a person's life those things sound great Too many people say well, I want those things but I don't want the I Don't want to know Jesus I don't want to be radical about my faith I just want all of the good stuff that Jesus offers So the question is am I using God or is God using me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:03-22:07

Am I using God do I see Jesus like a vending machine?

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:09-22:43

You know I go to him when I Want something and I go through the motions and tell him what I want and he gives me what I want and I'll let him Know when I need something else And he can do whatever until then or Do you see Jesus as he is he's a person to know a a person to love, a person to worship, a person to follow, a person who desires a relationship with you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:45-22:47

Am I using God or is God using me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:49-22:53

The number two on your outline is God using me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    22:55-22:59

Much like Jared Siska, the seven sons of Siva name dropped and failed.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:02-23:03

Let's look at the other side of it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:03-23:04

    Is God using me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:04-23:04

    Verse 17.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:06-23:23

Verse 17 says, "And this," the whole seven sons beaten up, fleeing naked, bruised, "And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, "both Jews and Greeks, and fear fell upon them all.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:26-23:36

"And the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled." So word got out about this and sort of a weird result, isn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:37-23:49

Like people heard about this crazy story and people were like, "There must be something to the person of Jesus." And this great fear came upon the people, like awesomeness of Jesus Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    23:52-24:05

Verse 18, "Also many of those who are now believers," okay, so like revival people coming to Christ, Many of those who were not believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:06-24:07

    What does that mean?

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:07-24:10

Well, they were involved in the occult. As I said, they had a bag of tricks.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:12-24:15

Confessing, that just means agreeing with God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:15-24:22

When you confess your sin, what you're saying is, "God, you said this is sin, and I agree with you. That is sin. That is wrong." That's confessing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:23-24:24

But what does it mean that they were divulging?

    Pastor Jeff:

    24:26-25:03

Well in the first century with these magicians they believed that if you revealed The incantation or how a spell or a trick worked it lost all of its power so they were saying we're done with this and We're unveiling our spells and thus making the powerless You kind of get what that means right if you've ever seen You ever see one of those shows that reveal how magic tricks work like you see a magic trick. You're like oh my gosh That's that's incredible like okay They stuck a guy in a box and all of a sudden guys head was over here and the guys foot was over here How do they do that and then they show you the trick right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:03-25:14

They show the clear boxes and how the guys like in a skateboard underneath and his head pops up and you watch you watch them How they do the trick how they divulge it you're like Next time you see the trick are you impressed?

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:14-25:22

No, you're like oh, that's just a dude in a skateboard under the platform. He's popping his head up and what up You guys seen that trick I?

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:22-25:23

I used to be impressed with it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:23-25:27

Anyways, you see, you get the point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:27-25:29

When you divulge it, it doesn't really mean anything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:29-25:30

It doesn't have any value anymore.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:31-25:32

Kind of lame, kind of lame.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:32-25:33

Oh, that's how you do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:33-25:35

Oh, that's what they were doing.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:35-25:39

They're like, here's our tricks and divulging it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:42-25:43

But then they took it a step further.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:43-25:44

    Look at verse 19.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:45-25:53

And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all.

    Pastor Jeff:

    25:55-26:00

And they counted the value of them and found it came to 50,000 pieces of silver.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:02-26:06

So they went a step further. They didn't just reveal their secrets.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:07-26:10

They said, "These are the books that we use.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:11-26:13

These are occultic spell books and they made a bonfire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:14-26:15

    We're done with this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:19-26:22

Am I using God or is God using me?

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:24-26:32

And I want to encourage you that if you want God to use you, if you're sitting here today and you're like, "I want God to use me for His purpose somehow.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:32-26:36

I want God to use me." Step one is repentance.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:38-26:42

    Nothing happens until you repent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:44-26:48

We're going to talk about repentance as we close out our time in the Word.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:50-26:57

The definition of repentance is a change of mind that results in a change of action.

    Pastor Jeff:

    26:59-27:00

    Repentance is changing your mind.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:00-27:40

You see, when you're involved in sin, you love it and you justify it, It's okay, and it's not that bad Repentance means you change your mind you start thinking about your sin the way God thinks about your sin You know somebody shout out a sin like your favorite sin Okay shout out a sin that you have never done in your life shout one out What's that hatred okay hatred maybe that's your sin hatred and your whole life you've justified it I've been wrong and and that person's a whatever and and I should hate and Repentance is no no.

    Pastor Jeff:

    27:41-28:13

I need to change the way I think God says I'm supposed to love even people that don't love me back and you I Gotta get my thinking to line up with God's thinking on this whole hatred thing That's repentance and when you change your mind your your attitudes and your actions follow that Right, so that's repentance So the opposite of trying to use God for what I want, in repentance I abandon everything that I want for whatever God wants.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:15-28:16

    So did you repent?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:17-28:19

On your outline, four truths you must embrace for true repentance.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:21-28:21

    Did you repent?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:22-28:24

Here's four truths that you must embrace.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:25-28:26

Like I said, this is step one.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:26-28:26

You want God to use you?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:27-28:28

    Step one is repentance.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:31-28:32

    So jot these down.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:33-28:37

All words begin with the letter P, but two negative, two positive.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:37-28:40

First of all, repentance isn't partial.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:42-28:43

    Repentance isn't partial.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:43-28:57

What I mean is these magicians didn't come and say, "We're renouncing our magic and we're tearing out the table of contents from our books and we're burning the table of contents and we're taking the rest of the book home and we're putting it back on the shelf.

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:57-28:58

    Did they do that?

    Pastor Jeff:

    28:59-29:00

    Whole book, whole book.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:00-29:02

You think they took partial library.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:02-29:09

I get it, these are the books that I kind of wasn't using anymore, so I'll burn those, but this one, I just kind of bought that one and it's kind of new and I really used it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:10-29:12

    All the books, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:12-29:13

    Repentance isn't partial.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:14-29:16

    Repentance goes all the way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:18-29:27

Meaning this, we don't say things like, I know I'm in a relationship, I shouldn't be involved in it. I'm gonna sort of wean myself off of that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:29-29:30

    Repentance isn't partial.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:32-29:37

I have this problem gambling, but I'm only gonna gamble away half of the money that I've been gambling.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:37-29:42

I know gambling is wrong. It's not being a good steward with what God's provided me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:43-29:45

So I'm only gonna gamble half. Is that repentance?

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:47-29:47

    No.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:48-29:49

    Repentance isn't partial.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:50-29:53

You know, I really should kick this drug habit.

    Pastor Jeff:

    29:56-30:00

So what I'm gonna do is I'm only gonna do drugs three days a week instead of five. Is that repentance?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:01-30:02

    Is that repentance?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:03-30:03

    No.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:04-30:06

    Repentance isn't partial.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:06-30:15

Repentance says, "This is wrong. I'm done with it. I'm going all the way." Secondly, repentance isn't procrastinating.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:17-30:26

We said the biggest lie in churches is, "I'll pray for you." Here's one of the other biggest lies in church. We don't verbalize this one, but we think this one a lot.

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:27-30:45

"I'll repent later." "I'll repent later." Let me ask you, if your mindset is, "I'll repent later," the more time goes on, are you more likely or less likely to repent the more time goes on?

    Pastor Jeff:

    30:46-32:43

Less right you're less likely to repent the more time goes on because you've given yourself time To sort of rethink it and rejustify it It's sort of like exercise well not for some of you let me exercising for me During the course of a day. I you know I can get up, and I can think you know what I'm gonna get in shape Today's the day of a new me And you can exercise in the morning because that's when you burn the most calories but then you know kids stuff and going to school and the beds too comfortable and I sort of Justified but then when I you know do get gone. I'm like Okay, you know what? I said I'm gonna work out today and I'm gonna do it during lunch instead of eating and well now now I'm kind of hungry and I Missed it this morning. Anyways, so I'll just touch I'll try to exercise later Maybe like after the kids get home from school But then the kids get home from school and there's snacks and supper to be made and you know whatever anything You know what maybe maybe during the game tonight I'll exercise during the game and I Can't actually this is a Stanley Cup playoffs. I can't the penguins need my attention So I'll exercise after the game maybe no. Well, I don't a games over you like I'm tired. I'm just going to bed It's really you know There's just more of me to love now So why lose weight right But the further you go the easier it is to just Nah later later to the point of it Repentance is like that when you feel the spirit convicting you and you feel the You feel the spirit of speaking to you so clearly Secondly, you need to strike while the iron is hot.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:43-32:50

While conviction is hot, it's because the longer you wait, the more time you have to justify and excuse your behavior.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:52-32:54

Repentance isn't partial and it isn't procrastinating.

    Pastor Jeff:

    32:57-33:00

Thirdly, write this down, repentance is pricey.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:01-33:02

    Repentance is pricey!

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:04-33:12

Your text says that the cost of the books that were burned came up to, what does your Bible say, like 50,000 pieces of silver?

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:13-33:14

    That was a denarius.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:15-33:18

    And a denarius was a day's wage.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:19-33:24

You work, you know, average common labor, you work for a day, you get a silver coin, you get a denarius.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:25-33:34

So if you have 50,000 denarii, I did the math on this a whole bunch of different ways, but Here's what it basically boils down to.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:35-33:36

Somewhere in the ballpark of $5 million.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:40-33:41

    $5 million!

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:42-33:55

And you know there was somebody off in the corner, another Judas, that was like, "You know, we could have sold those and used the money to open a soup kitchen," or whatever, or, "What a waste, you know, that was worth a lot of money." Repentance doesn't think like that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:56-33:57

    Repentance says, "This is wrong.

    Pastor Jeff:

    33:58-33:59

    I'm done with it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:00-34:02

I don't care what it costs me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:03-34:08

And that's the incredible paradox about following Jesus Christ, isn't it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:08-34:13

Following Jesus costs you nothing, but it costs you everything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:15-34:17

It costs you nothing because salvation is a free gift.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:17-34:21

You can't buy it, you can't earn it, you can't work it off, you can't deserve it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:21-34:24

Salvation is a free gift, but this free gift will cost you everything.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:25-34:35

Jesus said in Luke chapter 14, verse 33, So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:35-34:37

    Cannot be my disciple.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:37-34:43

Jesus said, "You've got to be willing to walk away from all of it." And Paul got that, didn't he? Philippians 3.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:44-34:53

Paul was just recounting all of the good things in his life, his good works, and his good heritage, and all the things that made him such a great human being.

    Pastor Jeff:

    34:54-35:16

But in Philippians 3, Paul says, "I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord." He says, "It doesn't mean anything to me. I walked away from everything because nothing in my life compares to knowing Jesus Christ." So repentance is pricey.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:17-35:21

It's giving up everything you have for everything that God has to give you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:22-35:26

And if you're not ready to do that, you aren't ready to follow Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:28-35:35

If you're not ready to say, I'm abandoning whatever it takes, then you're not ready to follow Jesus.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:37-35:40

    And fourthly, repentance is permanent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:42-35:44

Notice that they didn't say, well, we're gonna repent from this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:45-35:51

So let's pack all the books up in boxes and we'll put masking tape on them and we'll put them in storage because we're done with this.

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:52-35:54

The fire was sort of like a no going back thing, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    35:55-36:02

When you throw a book into a bonfire, that's a declaration of permanence.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:02-36:03

    Done, done.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:03-36:05

    It is burnt, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:06-36:07

I'm not going back to that.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:07-36:10

And that's the mindset of repentance.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:10-36:11

    It's permanent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:12-36:15

Listen, yes, there are times we slip up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:15-36:17

That's true, there are times we slip up.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:17-36:24

See, here's the thing, when repentance has a permanent mindset, The times that we do slip up, we don't excuse it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:25-36:26

    We don't excuse it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:27-36:29

What we do say is, that's not who I am.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:30-36:31

    I'm in Christ.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:31-36:33

Christ has given me a new identity.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:34-36:38

I'm going to kill that sin in me.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:39-36:41

And that sin, OK, it's not dead yet.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:41-36:44

Well, I'm going to keep hitting it until it is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:46-36:53

Jesus in Matthew chapter 5, verse 29, Jesus said, if your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:56-36:59

For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

    Pastor Jeff:

    36:59-37:06

And he said, if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away, for it is better that you lose one of your members than your whole body be sent into hell.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:08-37:13

Now do you think Jesus literally meant the cure for sin is ripping out body parts?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:14-37:14

    No.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:15-37:16

Blind people can still lust, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:19-37:22

Jesus was teaching something that's often called radical amputation.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:22-37:29

And it's the idea, you know, later on in Scripture, I believe in Romans, Paul talks about making no provision for the flesh.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:30-37:33

And that's what Jesus was talking about.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:33-37:35

That's what we see demonstrated here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:36-37:40

Because if you cut off your hand or you gouged out your eye, is that pricey?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:42-37:42

    It is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:43-37:43

    Is it permanent?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:45-37:46

    That's the point.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:46-37:47

    Repentance is.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:48-37:49

    It's pricey.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:50-37:51

    It's permanent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:53-37:57

So I need to ask you today, what do you need to throw in the fire?

    Pastor Jeff:

    37:59-38:04

If we, don't worry Ron, we're not, we started a bonfire right out here on the patio.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:06-38:06

    We're not.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:08-38:10

Ron's back there, he's sweating, I can see it from here.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:11-38:12

I don't think you should do that, Pastor Jeff.

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:13-38:39

If we started a bonfire right there today after church, We said, "If anyone needs to repent, whatever thing in your life is causing you to sin, we're going to throw it in the fire." And you're not allowed to say, "My wife is causing me to sin, so I'm going to throw her in the fire." You understand the point, right?

    Pastor Jeff:

    38:40-39:01

whatever provision you have made for your flesh, whatever you've excused, whatever thing you've held onto that you know has been a roadblock to enjoying your walk with Christ as He intended, what would you throw on the fire today?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:04-39:04

    What is it?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:06-39:08

Is it some kind of a substance that you're abusing?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:11-39:13

Is it a computer that you're using to look at pornography?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:17-39:21

Or is it just money and stuff that you have elevated to idle status in your life?

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:23-39:24

    It's going to fire.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:26-39:27

    See these guys got it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:27-39:29

    These magicians, they got it.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:30-39:33

Repentance isn't partial and it isn't procrastinating.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:33-39:34

    It's pricey and it's permanent.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:35-39:36

    Somebody strike a match.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:37-39:45

So getting back to Paul, this was the evidence that God was using him.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:45-39:47

Look at the last verse, I haven't highlighted my Bible.

    Pastor Jeff:

    39:47-40:03

It says, "So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily." The evidence that God was using him was the word of the Lord was increasing and prevailing mightily.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:03-40:14

and as we saw with these repentant magicians, the Word of God was changing people's lives.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:15-40:25

So as we close our time here today, having our last service ever at Marshall Middle School, I thought, what a great thing to pray for right now.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:26-40:29

As we're about to move on to our new home.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:31-40:33

You see, we are not using God.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:35-40:48

We are a group of people, and I'm speaking on behalf of our elders, our ministry team, we are a group of people who want nothing more than for God to use us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    40:50-40:59

that the new place would be known as, first of all, a place where the Word of the Lord increases and prevails mightily.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:00-41:04

Wouldn't that be a great banner to have over the new place on Perry Highway?

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:05-41:09

Like people driving down the road, like, "I wonder what happens there?" "Oh, I heard what happens there.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:09-41:14

That's a place where the Word of the Lord increases and prevails mightily.

    Pastor Jeff:

    41:14-42:01

That's what happens in that building." It is crazy what the Word of the Lord is doing in that building And also Where people's lives are forever changed Would that be a great banner to have over the new building what happens in there People go in that building jacked up and messed up And they encounter Jesus Christ and they walk out of there different people They let go of the things in their lives that are destroying them and hindering their walk with God They let go of those things and they throw them into fire and they walk out of there completely different people Wouldn't that be a great testimony for this new place on Perry Highway?

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:02-42:49

I'm gonna ask you as a worship team comes up. I'm just gonna ask you to stand with me and bow your heads I'd like us to agree together church about these things in prayer Just like you to stand by your head and I'm gonna pray And I would like you to pray with me agree with me on this The Father in heaven We are people who want to be authentic God. We're not playing games here We're not trying to figure out the right words to say or the right ways to drop the name of Jesus to attract people Father, we don't want to have the audacity to attempt to use you in some way, to manipulate you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:50-42:52

Father, we want to be people that you use.

    Pastor Jeff:

    42:55-43:04

Father, we would be content to be a pile of sweaty headbands right now, just knowing that God's using us, because it's not about us.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:05-43:06

    It's about you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    43:08-44:35

Father just now we pray together as a church That as we move into this new place father We're not we're not trying to establish our own little Tower of Babel establish our own little kingdom father. That's that is not Our heart at all father as we look at your word today We just want to echo what we see here, and I pray God that this new place Would be known for two things Specifically one father. I pray that this is a place where the Word of the Lord increases and prevails mightily. I Pray father that the word would get around That this building is a place where your word is lifted high Where there's a group of people very serious about what you said And secondly father, I pray that this new place is a place where lives are changed Not just lip service not just adding Jesus to my resume But a place where true repentance happens where people are done with their sin And they're ready to abandon everything that they have so that they may receive everything that you want to give them Let this be a place father of your word Transform lives We're praying we don't want to go without you.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:36-44:47

We don't want to take a step without knowing that you have already gone ahead of us, without knowing that you're with us, without knowing that you're going to be behind us every step of the way.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:50-44:51

So Father, we thank you for your promise.

    Pastor Jeff:

    44:54-45:03

us to be authentic followers of Jesus Christ. It's in His name that we pray, amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 19:11-20

  1. Why do you think God used the handkerchiefs and aprons of Paul to heal people?

  2. Why didn't the "exorcism" work for the sons of Sceva (Acts 19:13-16), even though they used the name of Jesus? What does this tell you about how the power of Jesus "works"?

  3. Do you think Satan can work miracles today? Discuss 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10. How do you know if a miracle is from God?

  4. Why is it better that God uses you, than you using God?

Breakout Questions:

Have you ever tried to use God for your own selfish reasons? What got your attention that it wouldn’t work out how you want?
Pray for one another.

Being a pastor one of the things that I have the privilege of doing is having wedding ceremonies and this should go without saying but usually part of the wedding ceremony is going to the wedding reception I remember several years ago and Aaron you know what I'm going to say several years ago we performed this wedding at our old church and you know I had my wedding suit on and Aaron was dressed to the nines and it was going to be our big all-day date out. Okay, we're gonna have to go to the wedding, we're gonna go to the reception, it was gonna be fantastic. And so we, the reception was in a different location than the wedding.

    01:38-02:28

So we get in the car and we drive down and Aaron and I walk in the reception hall and there was this little table set up and they had all these little cards that have the couple's name and what table they are to be seated, you know. So Okay, and we're looking and we're looking and we're looking and we're looking And we realized We weren't invited to the reception That was awkward not gonna lie That was awkward Standing in the lobby and other people are walking in like oh, where are you sitting pastor Jeff, and I'm like apparently in my car Did you get the steak or the chicken?

    02:28-02:30

    Apparently we got Arby's.

    02:32-02:37

I don't know. I mean, I've been in pastoral ministry now for over 20 years, and I've done, how many weddings have we done?

    02:38-02:40

Like dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens.

    02:41-03:25

After a while, you just sort of assume some things, but I learned something that day, a very valuable lesson, something I should have remembered, My mama told me one time you should never assume anything And mom actually had a little saying that went with that. No, not the one you're thinking of shame on you But you should never assume Anything and today we're going to be talking about witnessing And I think a lot of Christians get a little Sort of put off maybe a little intimidated maybe a little frustrated honestly, about witnessing for Christ, because I think a lot of Christians have some assumptions about witnessing.

    03:27-03:33

And last year at our church, we spent the entire year, if you recall, on one verse, do you remember?

    03:33-03:36

Acts 1.8, who remembers that verse?

    03:36-03:38

Jesus said, "And you will receive," what?

    03:39-03:46

"Power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses." Oh, fantastic, yes.

    03:46-03:50

So we saw the whole, that's really the whole theme of the book of Acts, right?

    03:51-04:01

The Holy Spirit, God's Holy Spirit comes upon God's people to give God's people power so that God's people would be witnesses for God in a lost and dying world.

    04:01-04:02

That's what the book of Acts is about.

    04:03-04:05

That's what the church is still about today.

    04:07-04:13

And today we're going to revisit that theme as we get to Acts chapter 19.

    04:15-04:22

We're going to shatter some assumptions that hinder people from witnessing.

    04:24-04:26

The good news is God wants to reach the lost.

    04:29-04:30

And He wants to reach the lost through you.

    04:31-04:33

And He wants to empower you to do so.

    04:35-04:37

So Acts chapter 19, turn there with me.

    04:37-04:41

As you turn there, I'd just like to give you a review, get us all caught up to speed where we are.

    04:41-04:46

where we saw in Acts, last couple of chapters, we've been following Paul on his missionary journeys.

    04:46-04:51

And remember we saw that Paul survived burnout in Corinth.

    04:52-05:00

We saw the apostle Paul making a vow to the Lord which sent him to Jerusalem to fulfill and then back to Antioch, the sending-based church.

    05:02-05:04

Then Paul started his third missionary journey.

    05:06-05:09

And today we're going to end up back in Ephesus.

    05:10-05:13

As we go through the text together, I want you to jot some things down.

    05:15-05:24

The title of today's message is "Unstoppable Witness." Witnessing for Christ. Three things. Three things you should never assume.

    05:26-05:27

Three things you should never assume.

    05:27-05:31

If you carry certain assumptions, you're going to be shy about witnessing.

    05:31-05:35

You're going to be intimidated. You're going to be fearful. You're going to be frustrated.

    05:35-05:41

So today we're going to just look at the text very simply, and we're going to shatter some assumptions about witnessing.

    05:41-05:42

    Here's the first one.

    05:43-05:48

Number one, don't assume religious people are saved.

    05:49-05:50

Look at verses one through seven.

    05:51-05:53

Don't assume that religious people are saved.

    05:53-05:54

Look at verses one through seven.

    05:55-06:02

And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus.

    06:03-06:05

    There he found some disciples.

    06:06-06:39

And he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism." And Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is Jesus." and hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

    06:40-06:48

And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

    06:48-06:55

There were about twelve men in all." So here's the question, what was going on with these guys spiritually?

    06:57-07:05

Because there's a lot of controversy and a lot of very weird doctrines that get circled around this passage.

    07:05-07:53

For example, the Bible college where I attended had this doctrine that they believed in entire sanctification, and they taught that in the Christian life, or in your life, when you reach this crisis point, and you receive God's grace, and you are saved, you are justified, but then during your Christian life you reach another crisis point where the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you are entirely sanctified, Meaning this, salvation, which justifies you, takes away the penalty of sin, but they taught that sanctification, this subsequent work of grace, not only removes the penalty of sin, but it removes the temptation to sin.

    07:54-08:00

And I've talked to guys that claim they haven't been tempted to sin in decades.

    08:01-08:04

    Is that anybody else's experience?

    08:06-08:09

I'm going to be honest with you. I wish it was true. I wish it was.

    08:09-08:12

I wish I could say, "I'm never tempted to sin.

    08:12-08:24

The Holy Spirit has completely removed the influence of my flesh to such a degree that I never have a sinful thought, attitude, word, action, nothing.

    08:24-08:29

Not even tempted." But that's what some people teach and believe.

    08:29-08:33

And they get it from texts like this to say, "Well, look, see?

    08:34-08:40

They were saved people, and then the Holy Spirit came upon them with this subsequent work of grace.

    08:40-08:45

And that is not at all what is happening in this passage.

    08:46-08:49

Keep in mind, the book of Acts is transition, remember?

    08:49-08:53

We're transitioning from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.

    08:53-09:03

And this was the day before CNN and the Internet that it took word a little while to travel about what Jesus Christ accomplished, right?

    09:05-09:18

So here Paul had found some men in Ephesus who were familiar with the Old Testament and even familiar up to the point of John the Baptist, but they were sort of like Apollos who we studied last week.

    09:18-09:24

They just hadn't heard what Jesus Christ had accomplished when he rose from the dead.

    09:24-09:29

So these were a group of guys that were sort of in the same camp as Apollos.

    09:29-09:33

But I want you to notice from the text that the Apostle Paul didn't just assume that they were believers.

    09:34-09:37

He asked them what? What did he ask them? Do you see it in your text?

    09:38-09:58

He said, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" He asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit?" And the implication clearly, as the Bible clearly teaches, is the Holy Spirit comes upon all of God's people upon belief.

    09:59-10:01

Okay? That is crystal clear in the New Testament.

    10:02-10:12

For example, 1 Corinthians 3.16, 6.19, both places, the Bible says that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.

    10:14-10:17

See, in the Old Testament, God dwelt in a building, the tabernacle, the temple.

    10:18-10:22

New Testament times, God's unique presence dwelt in the person of Jesus Christ.

    10:22-10:29

And when Jesus ascended into heaven and sent the promised Holy Spirit, you could say, "Well, where's God's house now?" God's house is you.

    10:30-10:34

Your body is the temple of God's Holy Spirit.

    10:35-10:41

And if you're a believer in Jesus Christ, if you're a born-again believer in Jesus Christ, that means God's Holy Spirit lives in you.

    10:42-10:55

See, God's Holy Spirit is not just for the Billy Grahams and the John Pipers and the real spiritual people of the world, God's Holy Spirit indwells all of his people who come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

    10:56-11:00

Paul says the same thing, but negatively, in Romans 8:9.

    11:00-11:10

He says, "Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him." So understand, there's no such thing as a Christian who doesn't have the Holy Spirit.

    11:12-11:17

So we see these men that Paul had encountered here in Ephesus said no, they didn't even...

    11:18-11:20

never even heard of the Holy Spirit.

    11:20-11:32

The Apostle Paul didn't go all like televangelist on them, like, "I'm gonna give you the gift of the Holy Ghost today!" and do some weird thing like smack them with a handkerchief or a suit jacket or whatever.

    11:33-11:33

    What did he do?

    11:35-11:36

    He told them about Jesus.

    11:37-11:44

He said, "You need to know the rest of the story." The Holy Spirit doesn't come through some weird preacher guy doing some weird act.

    11:44-11:51

The Holy Spirit comes upon a person who sincerely received Jesus Christ by faith.

    11:51-11:52

    So that's what Paul did.

    11:52-11:58

He says, "I'm going to share with you the rest of the story about Jesus." And the Bible says he laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

    11:58-11:59

    That's all through acts, right?

    11:59-12:04

We see the apostles being there when the Holy Spirit was coming upon God's people.

    12:07-12:07

    So what's the point?

    12:09-12:20

First of all, before we talk about the witnessing thing, I want to talk to the people that are sitting here, and I want to talk to the people that are going to be listening to this online.

    12:23-12:28

Just because you're religious doesn't mean that you're saved.

    12:29-12:31

Those are two entirely different things.

    12:34-12:40

I was thinking about this this week, you know, I think one of the reasons we like religion...

    12:40-13:07

What do I mean by religion? By religion I mean we sort of keep a checklist of here's things that I do, here's things that I don't do, I keep these rules, and when I keep the rules, God's happy with me, and when I don't keep the rules, God's upset with me, and we sort of chalk up things like church attendance or taking communion, or, you know, in the offering or whatever, we sort of look at these religious acts as things that earn us brownie points with God.

    13:07-13:16

And I think the reason we as people sort of like the idea of religion is that I think we sort of weigh it as evidence for ourselves.

    13:17-13:28

Like, "Do I belong to God? Well, sure I do, because look at all the stuff that I do for God." But I want you to see in the text here, these people were very religious.

    13:28-13:30

    These people were even baptized.

    13:32-13:35

But they were still missing the most important thing.

    13:37-13:44

See Paul didn't look at these guys and say, "Oh, religious enough, I'll move on to the real pagans." He said, "You're missing something.

    13:46-13:55

Because salvation, the evidence of salvation, comes from the Holy Spirit." What does that look like?

    13:57-14:00

Well, the evidence of salvation is transformation.

    14:01-14:01

    That's the evidence.

    14:03-14:07

The evidence of salvation is transformation that comes from the Holy Spirit.

    14:08-14:10

    When I say transformation, I don't mean...

    14:10-14:11

    You know what, you're right.

    14:11-14:23

From now on, I'm going to really try to behave, and it's an inward transformation of your mind and your heart and your attitudes that reflects in an outward transformation of your actions.

    14:24-14:25

    It's an inside-out thing.

    14:26-14:27

It's not just going through the motions.

    14:27-14:30

You can teach a monkey or a dog to go through the motions.

    14:31-14:38

The evidence of salvation is when it's an inside-out motivation, because the Holy Spirit has transformed your heart.

    14:40-14:47

Like, "Well, you know, Pastor Jeff, I've thought about that, and I'm not 100% sure that that happened to me.

    14:48-14:51

How would I know?" Well, there's very clear evidences of salvation.

    14:51-14:52

I want you to jot some down.

    14:52-14:55

There's many of them. I'm going to share five with you today.

    14:56-14:58

These are five evidences of transformation.

    14:59-15:00

These aren't things I came up with.

    15:01-15:03

These are things that God says in His Word.

    15:03-15:06

God says, "Look." He wrote these down. I'll give you the references.

    15:06-15:13

He says, "Here's evidence that you've been transformed." So you're wondering, "Do I really believe? Do I really have the Holy Spirit?

    15:13-15:16

Am I really saved?" Well, look at the evidence.

    15:17-15:19

Biblical signs, clear transformation has happened.

    15:20-15:23

Number one, you have a new love for God's Word.

    15:25-15:31

1 Peter 2:2 says that the believer loves the Word of God like a baby loves milk.

    15:33-15:36

And that's something our church is very familiar with, is babies, amen?

    15:37-15:39

We've got a lot of babies. I love it.

    15:40-15:45

Listen, if you are here with your baby, and your baby coos or cries or whatever, how much do you think that bothers me?

    15:47-15:47

    Not at all.

    15:48-15:50

That doesn't bother me. That's a sign of life.

    15:50-16:30

like that's awesome you hear that we got a we got a new little guy here a new little girl here that we can disciple into knowing the glory of Jesus Christ so that doesn't bother me at all okay just for the record where was I going with that oh yeah the point is babies naturally love milk they naturally love milk you don't have to convince them talk him into it you don't have to give him a slick sales speech you don't have to get one of those infomercial guys to get on there, you know, with his electric blue polo shirt and try to sell your baby on milk. Babies are just like, I love it. I love it. It's delicious. I suck it down.

    16:30-16:34

It helps me grow and I want more. And that's how the Christian looks at the Word of God.

    16:35-17:06

I love it. You don't have to talk me into it. God's Word is awesome. And yeah, it takes some studying and some understanding and I'm still learning every day, but I love God's words. 1 Peter 2 says that's an evidence. That's an evidence. Number two, clear biblical signs of transformation is a new awareness of right and wrong. And that comes from Hebrews 5, 13 and 14. Hebrews 5, 13 and 14. The Bible says that we grow in what is called discernment.

    17:07-17:13

You see, before I knew Christ, I didn't care what was right or wrong. All I cared about What was going to make me happy?

    17:15-17:20

But when you come to Christ, now you have this awareness as the Holy Spirit is working in your heart.

    17:20-17:22

No, no, no. This is wrong. This doesn't honor God.

    17:22-17:25

I should do this. I should stop doing this.

    17:26-17:28

I want to honor God above all things.

    17:28-17:32

And I need to make choices that reflect that.

    17:32-17:34

And the Holy Spirit gives you that ability to discern.

    17:36-17:54

Signs of Transformation #3 I want to grow to be more like Jesus Christ.

    17:54-18:03

Loving like Christ, merciful like Christ, praying like Christ, treating others the way Christ would have me treat them.

    18:05-18:09

That's the desire of every true transformed born-again Christian.

    18:09-18:10

    born-again spirit-filled believer.

    18:11-18:15

You want to be like Christ, and you're growing in that direction.

    18:16-18:22

Number four, biblical sign of transformation is a new desire to proclaim Christ to others.

    18:23-18:26

You have a desire to proclaim Christ to others.

    18:26-18:28

I want to. I want to.

    18:28-18:30

And maybe I'm still learning, like, how to do that.

    18:30-18:34

Maybe I don't always do it perfectly, and I still struggle sometimes with what to say.

    18:35-18:36

    But I want to.

    18:37-18:42

I'm not asking do you have the perfect speech to share the gospel.

    18:42-18:52

I'm asking do you have the desire that your friends and family, the people around you that you know are lost, do you have the desire to have Christ be made known to them?

    18:54-18:55

That is true of every Christian.

    18:57-19:00

Colossians 1, verses 28 and 29, write that down.

    19:01-19:11

And we also saw that in chapter 1, verse 8, I see power and the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses." That's something true of all of God's people.

    19:12-19:15

Spirit-filled, you want to tell others about Jesus Christ.

    19:17-19:19

    One more, number five.

    19:20-19:21

    New love for other Christians.

    19:22-19:23

    That's an evidence.

    19:23-19:24

    New love for other Christians.

    19:24-20:03

1 John 3:14 says, "And we know that we have passed out of death into life." euphemism for salvation and that we love the brothers John says this is an evidence you know you're saying how do you know you're saved he says you know you're saved when you have a love for other Christians I was gonna be honest with you feel like yeah I don't really yeah I kind of kind of like going to church but I really don't like the people there that's a that's a big red flag because one of the key evidences of salvation is that you You love. You love the brothers.

    20:04-20:04

    Okay?

    20:05-20:08

So, being religious doesn't mean you're saved.

    20:10-20:20

And as it pertains to your witnessing, I'd like to remind you again, point number one, don't assume religious people are saved.

    20:20-20:30

In fact, my experience has been religious people are often the hardest to share the Gospel with, because they're already convinced that they're okay.

    20:31-20:40

"Let me tell you about Jesus." "Oh, I don't need to hear about Jesus because I go to church every week." Religious people are often the hardest to save.

    20:41-20:43

They're the hardest to convince that they need salvation.

    20:44-20:49

Like, "Well, how would I know where they're at?" I would just encourage you to take a page out of the Apostle Paul's book.

    20:49-20:51

He just asked these people questions, right?

    20:51-20:53

He didn't have some magic apostle glasses.

    20:54-20:56

I'm like, "Well, I can see you don't have the Holy Spirit." He asked them questions.

    20:59-21:00

    Ask questions about their walk.

    21:01-21:03

All right, number two, number two.

    21:05-21:06

    We're shattering some assumptions.

    21:06-21:09

Number two, don't assume you can win everybody.

    21:10-21:12

Don't assume you can win everybody.

    21:12-21:13

    Look at verse eight.

    21:15-21:19

It says, "And he entered the synagogue, "and for three months," look at this.

    21:19-21:20

This is Paul, by the way.

    21:20-21:22

Wrote like half of the New Testament.

    21:23-21:29

you know, like a couple thousand years later, we're still studying every word that this man wrote under inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

    21:30-21:31

    Same guy.

    21:32-21:40

For three months, spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God.

    21:41-21:45

Reasoning means dialogue, okay? It just means he had conversations with them.

    21:45-21:51

Like, "Tell me about your walk with the Lord. Do you understand who Jesus is?" And it was back and forth conversation.

    21:53-21:54

    That's what reasoning is.

    21:55-21:55

    Persuading.

    21:56-21:59

That word means to convince by argument, right?

    22:00-22:03

If Paul was loaded for bear, he would have had the Old Testament practically memorized.

    22:06-22:13

So you have a guy like Paul for three months evangelizing.

    22:13-22:52

We stop right here, you're like, "Man, I bet you that place was on fire for Christ!" have somebody like Paul there for three months preaching could you imagine could you imagine like the altar calls they probably had to buy new carpet because people were just wearing a hole in the floor coming down and repentance and sackcloth and ashes and let's see what happens here verse 9 but when some Some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the way." The way is what they called Christianity back in Paul's day.

    22:54-23:09

Before the congregation, "He," Paul, "withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, daily in the Hall of Tyrannus." Like, what?

    23:10-23:26

You mean Paul was there for three months, unloading on these people with everything he knew about the Scriptures and the fulfillment that Jesus Christ made, and the result was you had people that were stubborn?

    23:28-23:29

    That literally is hard-hearted.

    23:31-25:27

unbelief and even to the point of speaking evil Here's the point You can't win everybody you can't win everybody I'll be honest with you. This is a lesson that I had to learn personally because very early on in my ministry I Studied apologetics like my life depended on it. I studied all the creation science and all the archaeological and historical All that stuff is great. I encourage you to study it and I'm telling you my early years of ministry. I devoured that stuff every tape kids there we used to before CDs well you Some of you guys probably know what CDs are anymore, but I remember my car had a tape player I just I get these apologetics tapes and I would listen to them in the car and I'd be reading and I'd be looking stuff Up and I'd be studying because I had this idea that if I was prepared Knowing the Bible and knowing the apologetics I could sort of back anybody into a corner just through arguing and they'd have no choice They're like you're right Jeff. You're absolutely right I'm going to have to receive Jesus because I don't have anything to say against what you're telling me. So, all right let's get the baptizing I was sure of it I'm like I they're not gonna be able to argue with me is that true you can't argue somebody into the kingdom you can't like I said apologetics all this stuff is important you should be studying this stuff and you should be depauled in for three months I'm just saying you can't take it as a personal fail when somebody that that you clearly share the gospel and the reasonableness of the gospel with them, and they still reject Christ, you can't take it personally.

    25:30-25:34

You know the Bible, how the Bible refers to the unsaved?

    25:34-25:37

You know the kind of terms the Bible uses to refer to the unsaved?

    25:38-25:39

The Bible says the unsaved are lost.

    25:41-25:42

They don't even know they're lost.

    25:42-25:46

Just meandering out, they don't even know they're lost.

    25:47-25:49

The Bible also says they're blind.

    25:49-25:50

    Did you know that?

    25:51-25:51

    They're blind.

    25:52-25:54

The Bible also says they're dead.

    25:56-25:57

I want you to think about that.

    26:00-26:11

You couldn't take a physically blind person and put a book in front of them and say, "Read this for me." And they're like, "I can't." "What are you talking about? I can read it.

    26:11-26:13

Why can't you read it? It's easy.

    26:13-26:18

You just look down at the page and you read it." It's cruel. But you see the point.

    26:19-26:24

A blind person cannot, they are completely unable to read that.

    26:25-26:33

In the same way, a spiritually blind person is spiritually unable to see their need for Jesus Christ.

    26:34-26:39

That's not your fault. The spiritual blinders are on.

    26:41-26:43

The Bible says lost people are dead.

    26:46-26:49

Go to a funeral home and go up to the casket.

    26:49-26:51

I don't encourage you to actually do this.

    26:51-26:59

But go up to the person laying in the casket and say, "Hey, come on, we're going to the movies this afternoon. My treat." Like, why aren't they getting up?

    26:59-27:02

"My treat, I said." Because they're dead.

    27:02-27:05

Dead people can't respond to anything, right?

    27:05-27:09

The Bible says that the lost people are spiritually dead.

    27:12-27:14

    So what changes that?

    27:16-27:21

Only the Holy Spirit can convict someone of their sin.

    27:22-27:33

And somehow, in a way that I don't understand, God's Spirit works through God's people sharing God's Word.

    27:35-27:52

Like I said, I don't understand how that all works I don't But you see God doesn't tell me to understand it. He just tells me to do it God doesn't say you know thou shalt sit down and figure out how all this stuff works and then go out and try it God says you tell people about Jesus like What if some get saved?

    27:53-28:05

Fantastic. That's the work of the Holy Spirit. Well, what if some like speak evil about you know us like it happened to Paul's day That's that's not on us The results aren't up to us.

    28:07-28:08

    The Holy Spirit's work.

    28:09-28:30

Take every opportunity, yes, take every opportunity to share the gospel, but there comes a time that you need to take another page out of the Apostle Paul's book here and withdraw from people who are reacting harshly.

    28:32-28:33

There comes a time that you have to do that.

    28:35-28:36

I encourage you to seek the Lord on that.

    28:37-28:44

There's no magic formula, but I can tell you there comes a time that you need to stop putting your pearls before the swine.

    28:44-28:45

    That's what Paul did.

    28:45-28:53

He goes, "All right, there's..." Not only are they rejecting, hardening their heart, not only do they refuse to believe, now they're speaking evil.

    28:53-28:55

Paul's like, "All right, pack your bags.

    28:55-28:56

We're going to the Hall of Tyrant.

    28:56-28:58

We don't really know much about him.

    28:58-29:06

His name means'my tyrant.'" And some people think that was a nickname, like he was a teacher in this hall, and that was the nickname that his students gave him.

    29:06-29:13

So, I don't know. But, you do have to see that Paul sort of packed things up and moved on.

    29:16-29:22

But for the rejecters, it's not your fault that they're rejecting God.

    29:23-29:26

Don't put the weight on yourself. Okay? Don't put the weight on yourself.

    29:27-29:37

I have people come to me with the heart and compassion of Christ, and they're like, "Pastor Jeff, I have tried sharing with this person, and they're getting worse.

    29:37-29:46

And just when I thought that they were ready to come to church with me, or come to a small group, or come to a Bible study, now they're getting worse, and I feel so bad.

    29:46-29:51

Should I have said something different?" You cannot put that weight on yourself.

    29:53-30:01

Your job is to share the love of Christ with them, Share the word of Christ with them and pray that the Holy Spirit does the inside out work that only he can do.

    30:02-30:06

You can't make a spiritually blind person see. You can't make a spiritually dead person live.

    30:06-30:08

Only the Holy Spirit can do that.

    30:10-30:15

Paul didn't win everybody. Billy Graham didn't win everybody.

    30:17-30:23

Charles Spurgeon didn't win everybody. John Piper didn't win everybody.

    30:23-30:27

And did you know Jesus Christ didn't win everybody?

    30:29-30:43

Jesus Christ had people walk away from Him while He was preaching, saying, "This is a hard saying. Who can accept it?" So let's shatter that myth. Don't assume you can win everybody.

    30:45-30:47

It's up to the Holy Spirit, finally, for today.

    30:49-30:52

Don't assume you can see all God is doing through you.

    30:52-30:59

Don't assume that you are able to see everything that God is doing through you.

    31:00-31:01

    Look at verse 10.

    31:04-31:05

    In the Hall of Tyrannus.

    31:05-31:13

It says, "This continued for two years." So all the residents of Asia—by the way, that's Asia Minor.

    31:14-31:16

In biblical times it was called Asia.

    31:17-31:17

    Like, where is that today?

    31:18-32:07

I think Asia I think like China and Thailand this was in Turkey modern-day Turkey. Okay, where they're out here Let's continue for two years that all the residents of Asia Heard the word of the Lord both Jews and Greeks so for two years Paul had this little group and he taught them and it would It'd be easy to look at these two years as a waste right again, I spent - this is Paul's life You know the greatest missionary of all time and he spent two years and somebody could look at this and say well I Wasn't very effective You know he goes and he preaches his heart out and he ends up having to leave because people are speaking evil But then you get to verse 10 Where the Holy Spirit tells us?

    32:08-32:45

What a testimony all the residents of Asia heard the word Think of the churches that were planted as a result the Church of Colossae the church at Hierapolis and Revelation chapters 2 & 3 those seven churches including Ephesus were all part of Asia Minor and Some scholars think that maybe it was during this time here in Acts that many of those churches were planted So Paul preached a word Paul made disciples and then these disciples went out and spread the gospel.

    32:46-32:55

Church, we have such a limited scope of what God is doing through us.

    32:57-33:00

I don't know how much of this Paul actually understood at the time.

    33:01-33:08

I don't know if he understood how far his influence was going, and I think today the same thing can certainly be said for us.

    33:09-33:16

The scope of what's happening in this church goes so far beyond what you see in this room.

    33:18-33:47

Because of the marvels of modern technology and the diligence of people like Ben Murphy putting the sermons up on the website, do you know we get emails and cards in the mail from people that we've never met that are like, "Hey, I listen to you every week. I know you don't know me, but I listen to you every week." And they're like, "And I appreciated this sermon on..." and they're quoting certain things, and it really meant a lot to me, and I ever think about doing a sermon on this, and so it's not just like spam, right?

    33:48-33:55

These are real people that are being affected by the ministry that's happening in our little church.

    33:56-33:57

    It's incredible.

    33:58-35:22

You know, we sent a group to Romania a couple years ago to build a training center, and we're seeing pictures of pastors and church planters that are being trained sent out to plant churches all over Eastern Europe. Think of the impact that's going to be made for generations. Because a small group of people from a small church like this went out and were willing to invest in a ministry over in Europe. A lot of you might not know this, but do you know that our church is like famous in Ghana? I don't mean Harvest Bible Chapel James McDonald, I mean Pittsburgh North I get regular calls and emails and letters from some pastor in Ghana in West Africa who found us online somehow and he says I'm distributing your materials all through northern Ghana and he sends me testimonies here's what you know pastor Alfred says and you know and then he says me pictures of people sitting in classes and using our materials and again give another shout out to Ben Murphy but he's put our materials on CDs so we can send them over so that they're able to reproduce them and distribute them. Isn't that crazy? Just when you think oh you know what are we doing here there's just you know just a just a few of us shinzers sitting in a sitting in a cafeteria.

    35:25-36:46

this is affecting northern Ghana what and the one email that I got from a pastor Abraham in Ghana he said these materials are awakening a spirit of evangelism and revival in Ghana I was like what isn't that crazy and my point certainly is not yay us everybody reach around and pat each other on the back I'm not saying that at all what I'm saying is this we don't ever really see the scope of what we're doing of the way that God is using us we don't we don't see it but it's happening oh we're getting little glimpses I mean the emails and cards I get are only the people that took the time to actually respond you know who knows how many other people are using our materials and resources out there. In October we're going to Thailand to train the evangelists and the ministers over there to equip them in ministering to all of the northern jungle hill tribe people. Think of the influence that's going to have for generations. Not Not just out there, think about what's happening inside the walls of our church.

    36:46-36:47

    Think of Arrow.

    36:48-36:58

I look at the work that Dan and Alicia are doing with these young people, to think, what's that going to look like in five years, in ten years, as these young people go out?

    37:00-37:04

And now they are influencers for Christ in whatever community.

    37:05-37:07

That's the whole meaning behind Arrow, by the way, right?

    37:07-37:34

Psalm 127, they're launched out. What kind of impact are the leaders of the Arrow ministry making across the world when these young men and women are being sent out? I think of Harvest Kids and the work that Mandy and her staff does, teaching them. Think of these kids that are growing and are going to be in Arrow soon. The deposits of God's Word that are being made in their lives right now.

    37:34-37:46

Think about that and how these kids are going to affect the next generation which by the way as a culture are we drawing Closer to God or further away from God as a culture which which is it?

    37:47-38:02

Further away right to think about think about these kids what the influence for Christ that they're going to have an increasingly dark culture Think of the babies for church What an opportunity from day one?

    38:03-38:19

We have the ability to love them and to assist the parents in teaching them about the Lord Here's the point I heard a preacher say this one time it always stuck with me. He said you need to bloom Where you're planted bloom where you're planted?

    38:22-38:29

And if this church is where God has you serve him faithfully and Watch how he takes what is happening?

    38:32-38:40

right here So when you witness to others, there's something that you can assume.

    38:41-38:41

    There's something you can.

    38:42-39:00

That's Isaiah 55.11, where God says, "When His Word is sent out, it never returns to Him empty, but it always accomplishes the purposes for which He sends it out." You can assume that every time you share the Word of Christ with someone, God is working.

    39:01-39:02

    You can assume that.

    39:03-39:08

But don't assume that the religious people that you meet are already saved.

    39:10-39:13

Don't assume that you can win everyone.

    39:14-39:20

And don't assume that you can see everything that God is doing through you.

    39:21-39:21

    Let's pray.

    39:23-39:29

Father in heaven, It's a staggering thought that you would save us.

    39:31-39:49

And it's almost equally as staggering that you would then use us to tell other people about your plan of salvation, how you've delivered us from sin, from death, from hell, through the sacrifice of your own Son.

    39:50-39:58

Father, I pray, even though witnessing was sort of our ministry theme last year, we certainly can't ever get away from that.

    39:59-40:04

That's one of the pillars of our church, Father, is sharing the good news of Jesus with boldness.

    40:04-40:19

And I pray, Father, You would continue to raise up people who will share the love and the Word of Christ with everyone they come in contact with and leave the results up to you.

    40:21-40:40

Father, sometimes we get discouraged because we have expectations on things that you've never given us. We try to claim promises that you've never made. So I thank you for this little portion of Acts that we read here today where we can sort of have a reality check, Father.

    40:41-40:48

Shatter our assumptions. Find us faithful witnesses for Jesus Christ.

    40:49-40:52

It's in his name that we pray, Amen.

Small Group Questions (Whole Group):
Read Acts 19:1-10

  1. What questions did Paul ask in Acts 19:2-3? What do you think prompted him to ask those questions?

  2. Do you think these disciples (Acts 19:1-7) were saved before Paul ministered to them? Why or why not?

  3. How do you know if you received the Holy Spirit? How can you tell if another person has received the Holy Spirit?

  4. What are the evidences that someone is hardening their heart (Acts 19:9)? How did Paul respond? How should WE respond?

Breakout Questions:

Discuss:
Have you held any of the assumptions discussed in the message (religious
people are saved, you can convince anyone into the kingdom, you know all that
God is doing through you)?

Pray: To become a Spirit-powered, God-glorifying witness.

Unstoppable Fellowship.

  • 01:04-01:06

So let's turn to God's Word together today.

    01:07-01:08

    Acts chapter 18.

    01:10-01:11

    Acts chapter 18.

    01:11-01:12

    We're going through a series.

    01:12-01:14

    Unstoppable church.

    01:15-01:17

    The church of Jesus Christ.

    01:18-01:24

The church that He promised to build is unstoppable.

    01:24-01:26

Jesus said the gates of hell won't prevail against it.

    01:26-01:26

    Amen?

    01:29-02:21

The church is unstoppable, but I'll be honest with you, that there's times that I don't I don't I don't feel that personally and I guess there's times I feel more like if you're from this area if you can think back a few years ago there was a there was a building in between Butler and Gibsonia right on route 8 it was on like the east side of route 8 there was a building that was obviously going to be used for commercial space and it was looking fantastic and it got halfway built and construction stopped and some of you guys know what I'm talking about but some smart aleck came along with their commentary on this halfway done building project and spray-painted a word on the side of this half building and the word that they spray-painted on the side was fail.

    02:24-02:32

I don't know the whole story behind that, but I will tell you this, there's a lot of times in my life I feel like that building.

    02:34-02:35

    Don't you sometimes?

    02:36-02:52

You feel like I had a good strong start, I've had some good days, but let's be honest, there's times that I blow it, and I'm like, "How could I have been so stupid?" There's times that I see an immature attitude welling up in my own heart.

    02:52-02:55

And I think to myself, "Jeff, you're 41 years old now.

    02:56-03:09

You should have been done with those stupid attitudes 20 years ago." Sometimes I feel like somebody should just come along with a can of spray paint and just spray it across my head.

    03:09-03:10

    Fail!

    03:11-03:11

    Fail!

    03:14-03:17

There's a verse in God's Word that I remind myself of often.

    03:19-03:47

Philippians 1.6, the apostle Paul, who we're going to be talking about today, he said, "And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." Paul says, "God always finishes what He starts." Really?

    03:48-04:05

He says, "And I am sure of this." So instead of spray painting the word "fail" for that building which since that time has been completed, and I think more accurately portrays the Christian life.

    04:07-04:20

Instead of spray painting the word fail at the time, if we could go back, maybe on that building, maybe on your life right now, if you're feeling like a failure, maybe there's something different that should be spray painted on you.

    04:20-04:21

And that's what we're gonna talk about today.

    04:21-04:25

What should be spray painted on you is this, work in progress.

    04:26-04:33

How many people here this morning would say, "Pastor Jeff, I think my life qualifies right now "as being a work in progress." Anybody else?

    04:34-04:36

Fantastic, because that's me, all right?

    04:36-04:42

And if you're like done, complete, then you're a bit delusional, okay?

    04:43-04:48

But for the rest of us that have a more biblical reality of who we are, we're a work in progress.

    04:50-04:55

And there's good news for us because God always finishes what He starts, right?

    04:55-04:56

    Remember creation week?

    04:57-05:02

God didn't start creation week as like, separate water from waters and create dry land.

    05:05-05:06

    I'll get to it later.

    05:08-05:09

    He finished what he started.

    05:09-05:12

We saw this through the Bible 101 series with Abraham.

    05:12-05:20

God promised Abraham he was gonna be this mighty nation with countless descendants in this special land, a blessing for the whole world.

    05:20-05:27

And God saw that through to completion, despite all of the human obstacles that didn't bother God.

    05:27-05:29

    He finished what he started.

    05:31-05:33

We saw it with the mission of Jesus Christ, amen.

    05:34-05:41

"Who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising and shamed Jesus, went through with the mission." He finished what He started.

    05:43-05:51

And the absolute certainty of God's Word for you and for me is God is not finished with you.

    05:52-05:54

You are a work in progress.

    05:55-05:57

I am a work in progress.

    05:58-06:02

At Harvest Bible Chapel, we talk about discipleship.

    06:03-06:04

What does it mean to be a disciple?

    06:04-06:11

We believe a disciple is somebody who worships Jesus Christ, who walks with Jesus Christ, and who works for Jesus Christ.

    06:12-06:17

And talking about walking with Christ, that concept is used so many times in the New Testament.

    06:18-06:20

Your Christian life is a walk.

    06:21-06:22

    You know what walk means?

    06:22-06:24

Well, first of all, walk means intentional, right?

    06:25-06:26

    It doesn't happen by accident.

    06:28-06:34

If you're going to walk somewhere, you have to consciously make the decision, "I'm going to get up and get my legs moving.

    06:36-06:38

But what I want you to see, especially for today, is walking.

    06:40-06:45

The reason the Bible uses that word to describe the Christian life, walking denotes progress, right?

    06:46-06:52

If you're going for a walk, you're able to say, "You know, I was there.

    06:55-07:01

And over some time, now I'm here." It's progress.

    07:03-07:08

Your walk with Jesus Christ was an event and it is a process.

    07:08-07:09

What do you mean by that?

    07:09-07:11

    You are saved, that's done.

    07:11-07:13

    Christ accomplished that.

    07:13-07:19

So you were saved and you are being sanctified.

    07:20-07:24

In other words, you were born again and now you are growing in Christ.

    07:26-07:29

So I can readily admit that I'm a work in progress.

    07:30-07:34

And when I asked you if you're a work in progress, you were very eager to put your hands, I'm a work in progress, yeah, yeah, yeah, I am too, I am too.

    07:35-07:36

Okay, but here's the hard thing, church.

    07:37-07:37

    Here's the hard thing.

    07:38-07:42

Can you acknowledge that other people are a work in progress?

    07:44-08:00

It is so much easier to acknowledge that I am, than it is for me to look at your failures and remember that you are also a work in progress.

    08:02-08:07

If I refuse to acknowledge that I'm a work in progress, I'm going to stagnate my own growth.

    08:08-08:12

But if I refuse to acknowledge that other people are a work in progress, I'm going to be judgmental.

    08:13-08:18

So as we get to Acts 18, we're going to follow Paul on his missionary journey.

    08:20-08:25

I just want you to see from the text today, Three attitudes that you must embrace.

    08:28-08:33

Knowing all of Christ's people are a work in progress.

    08:33-08:35

We're talking about Christ's people here.

    08:35-08:42

If you're here today and you're not a born-again follower, born-again believer in Jesus Christ, this isn't going to apply to you.

    08:44-08:46

You're still dead in your sin.

    08:48-08:49

But today can be the day.

    08:50-08:54

Today can be the day that you say, I'm done trying to do things my way.

    08:54-08:55

I'm done trying to figure things out my own way.

    08:55-08:57

My sin isn't getting me anywhere.

    08:58-08:59

I want to turn from my sin.

    08:59-09:01

I want to receive Jesus Christ by faith.

    09:01-09:03

I want Him to be my Lord and my Savior.

    09:03-09:04

You can do that right now.

    09:07-09:13

And the glorious reality for you too will be God will finish what He starts in you.

    09:15-09:18

So in your outline today, I want you to jot a couple things down.

    09:19-09:23

because we are all a work in progress.

    09:25-09:31

    Number one, accept others' convictions.

    09:32-09:34

Look at verses 18-23 with me.

    09:36-09:54

It says, "After this," the events we talked about last week, sermon available online, "After this, Paul stayed many days longer and then took leave of the brothers "Set sail for Syria." And with him, Priscilla and Aquila.

    09:54-09:55

    We met them last week.

    09:57-10:05

At Sancreia, he had cut his hair, for he was under a vow.

    10:06-10:09

And they came to Ephesus and he left them there.

    10:11-10:14

But he himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.

    10:16-10:18

and they asked him to stay for a longer period, he declined.

    10:19-10:27

But on taking leave of them, he said, "I will return to you if God wills." And he set sail from Ephesus.

    10:29-10:35

When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.

    10:36-10:50

After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

    10:51-10:52

    Stop there for a second.

    10:52-10:57

Because we're a work in progress, number one, first of all, you have to accept other people's convictions.

    10:59-11:05

Now verse 18, you saw it, it says that Paul was under a vow.

    11:07-11:12

And he cut his hair because he was under a vow.

    11:12-11:14

What in the world is the Bible talking about?

    11:14-11:19

Well, this is probably a Nazirite vow from Numbers chapter six.

    11:20-11:25

You know any famous Nazirite vow takers?

    11:27-11:30

One that comes first to mind is Samson.

    11:31-11:32

    Remember Samson?

    11:32-11:33

    He took the Nazirite vow.

    11:34-11:35

John the Baptist took a Nazirite vow.

    11:35-11:39

Now those guys, they took the lifelong version, okay?

    11:39-11:39

    You could do it.

    11:40-11:43

So I'm going to be a Nazirite for the rest of my entire life.

    11:43-11:49

But did you know that you could also take the vow for a month?

    11:49-11:50

It could be a 30-day vow.

    11:53-11:54

    That's probably what Paul did.

    11:55-11:58

The Nazirite vow, you can read about this in Numbers chapter 6.

    11:58-12:01

It was a vow of separation unto the Lord and there were some things that went with it.

    12:01-12:04

You remember the top three things, especially from Samson's life.

    12:04-12:06

You weren't allowed to cut your hair.

    12:06-12:10

You weren't allowed to drink alcohol and you weren't allowed to touch dead things.

    12:13-12:19

So Paul, again apparently taking a temporary vow, he would have cut his hair to finish the vow.

    12:21-12:40

And according to what I studied this past week, it seems like an unusual custom to us, but in this case, when you were completing the vow by cutting your hair, you had to go to Jerusalem to present your hair at the temple within 30 days of cutting it.

    12:41-12:45

And that explains why Paul was in such a hurry to get to Jerusalem.

    12:45-12:55

Did you see in verse 22, it says when he landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and then went down.

    12:55-12:58

Very specifically, it says he went up and down.

    12:58-12:59

    What does that mean?

    12:59-13:00

    Jerusalem.

    13:02-13:07

Jerusalem was built on a high place called Mount Zion, right?

    13:07-13:12

So the language is saying that he went up to Jerusalem and he went down from Jerusalem.

    13:13-13:17

So apparently, kind of putting the pieces together in the text, he was trying to fulfill this vow.

    13:18-13:20

Like, okay, so what is your point?

    13:21-13:26

Well, while you do what you do all week, I do a lot of reading and studying.

    13:27-13:30

And I get to this verse and I'm just like, what's going on here?

    13:31-13:33

Okay, he takes a vow, cuts his hair, he's on the run.

    13:38-13:47

Interestingly, commentators that I've read this past week are on two extreme sides of Paul taking this vow.

    13:48-13:52

There are some guys that were like, how dedicated.

    13:53-13:55

    Look at Paul, so dedicated.

    13:57-14:01

He just warms our hearts with his dedication to his mission.

    14:02-14:03

    Look how dedicated.

    14:04-14:09

Then you had other people that were like, "He's sinning!

    14:10-14:34

How dare he, who has divorced himself from the ritualistic and legalistic aspects of of Judaism, immersed himself again into Judaism by taking a Jewish vow. How dare he? This was sinful, this was wrong, and both sides of the spectrum.

    14:37-14:50

But here's the problem with that. Does anybody have anything in your Bible that says one way or the other whether this was the right thing for him to do.

    14:50-14:58

Does your Bible say that, does anybody have a Bible that says, you know, "And the Lord was greatly pleased at what Paul did"?

    14:58-14:59

    Does your Bible say that?

    15:00-15:06

Or does your, does anybody have a Bible that says, "And the Lord's anger was kindled because of Paul taking this vow"?

    15:06-15:07

    Does your Bible say that?

    15:10-15:11

    Mine doesn't either.

    15:13-15:19

So obviously, my only conclusion when I read this, is just simply this.

    15:20-15:26

Paul obviously was under some kind of a conviction at this point in his ministry, and he was just living it out, right?

    15:28-15:30

I mean, are we safe to say that?

    15:31-15:34

That Paul was obviously living out some kind of a conviction that he had.

    15:34-15:35

Are we safe to say that?

    15:37-15:42

So, I mean, he wasn't denying Christ.

    15:42-15:45

He wasn't sinning. The text doesn't say he was wrong.

    15:45-15:48

And here's the truth I want you to see, work in progress people.

    15:51-15:58

That some people, whether you agree with it or not, are still going to hold on to some convictions.

    15:59-16:03

This guy was Jewish. He was Jewish for his entire life.

    16:04-16:06

And he took a Jewish custom.

    16:09-16:15

So why do we feel like we have this need to jump in and judge this?

    16:17-16:18

When God's Word doesn't even do it.

    16:18-16:20

God's Word just says this is what happened.

    16:22-16:24

But commentators don't treat it like that.

    16:25-16:29

They treat it like this is something awesome that we should all do today.

    16:29-16:31

Alright, everybody, let's go to the barbershop.

    16:31-16:32

Right after church, we're going to line up.

    16:32-16:34

We're all going to cut our hairs and fulfill our vow.

    16:34-16:39

And there were some people that were like this was a horrible low point in Paul's life and he committed a grievous sin.

    16:40-16:41

I just don't see it from the text.

    16:42-16:42

    Either way.

    16:44-16:52

Here's what I do see from the text, and even up to today, some people whether you agree with it or not still hold on to some convictions.

    16:54-16:56

They might not be your convictions.

    16:59-17:02

And you need to learn to say, that's okay.

    17:04-17:07

Like for example, some people say, "You know, I'm a vegetarian.

    17:07-17:08

and think we should eat meat.

    17:09-17:10

    That's not my conviction.

    17:12-17:15

But if that's yours, that's okay.

    17:17-17:28

Some people say, "I think drinking alcohol is a sin, and you should never, ever, ever, ever drink alcohol." And some people say, "I think it's okay.

    17:30-17:36

As long as you don't get drunk, I think it's okay to have a drink once in a while." You have to seek the Lord and come up with your own convictions.

    17:36-17:44

But why in the world should I stand on the sidelines and tell you that your personal convictions and your walk with the Lord is wrong when it's clearly not a sin issue?

    17:46-17:49

We could go on for some people, homeschooling versus public school.

    17:51-17:54

You gotta come up with your own convictions on what you're gonna do with your kids.

    17:55-18:04

Some people, it's what kind of movies we're allowed to see, not allowed to see, politics, Democrat versus Republican.

    18:05-18:10

You know, somebody very close to me, he has a conviction, he will not shoot guns on Sunday.

    18:10-18:14

As an avid hunter, avid sportsman, he will not shoot guns on Sunday.

    18:15-18:17

That is certainly not my conviction.

    18:19-18:23

But who am I to step in and tell him that he should not hold this conviction?

    18:26-18:30

Why do we feel like it's our civil duty to jump in with commentary on everything?

    18:31-18:32

You know what I think it is?

    18:32-18:33

You know what I really think it is?

    18:35-18:36

    I think it's social media.

    18:37-18:43

Social media has given us a platform that we think our opinion matters about everything.

    18:43-18:44

    Now, your opinion does matter.

    18:46-18:47

    But about everything?

    18:49-18:54

Anytime anything happens in the news, is we gotta get on here and get to the commentary section.

    18:54-18:56

    And really?

    18:58-19:07

We somehow feel empowered by social media that I have this voice and people need to know exactly what I think about every single thing.

    19:07-19:11

No, people don't really need to know what you think about everything.

    19:13-19:16

Like, but Pastor Jeff, their convictions are so immature.

    19:18-19:21

I hear what you're saying, but sometimes people hold very immature convictions.

    19:22-19:22

    You know why?

    19:25-19:26

Because they're a work in progress.

    19:28-19:28

    Like me.

    19:30-19:31

    They're a work in progress.

    19:32-19:37

And as they grow, the Lord's going to work out some of this stuff in their lives.

    19:38-19:50

Meanwhile, God says, Romans 14, one, "As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions." And I'm not gonna read the whole passage.

    19:50-19:52

You gotta go home and read Romans 14.

    19:52-19:53

That's what Paul talks about the whole chapter.

    19:53-19:55

    Not to quarrel over opinions.

    19:55-19:56

    Sin issue? Yes.

    19:57-19:58

    Doctrine issue? Yes.

    19:59-20:02

    Matters of opinion? No. No.

    20:04-20:05

You seek the Lord and do your thing.

    20:06-20:07

I'll seek the Lord and do my thing.

    20:08-20:08

    All right?

    20:09-20:14

    Not to quarrel over opinions.

    20:15-20:21

Like, okay, I hear what you're saying, but is there ever a time that we should confront somebody?

    20:22-20:22

    Actually, there is.

    20:23-20:24

Let's look on in the text.

    20:25-20:27

    Number two, jot this down.

    20:29-20:31

Because we are all a work in progress, you accept others' convictions.

    20:33-20:35

Number two, assist those who need to grow.

    20:37-20:38

Assist those who need to grow.

    20:38-20:40

Meanwhile, in Ephesus, look at verse 24.

    20:41-20:48

"Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus.

    20:48-20:56

He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures." Okay, Alexandria, that was in Egypt.

    20:56-20:59

And this is where Paulus was from, giving you a little bit of his background.

    20:59-21:06

Look at verse 25, it says, "He had been instructed in the way of the Lord." What does that mean?

    21:08-21:09

That was sort of an Old Testament term.

    21:11-21:15

That means living a moral life as God prescribes.

    21:17-21:22

You know, he really understood Old Testament theology.

    21:24-21:55

and Old Testament morality, the law, and all of those things. Look on verse 25, "And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus." Okay, so he knew about Jesus, but look at this next phrase, "Though he knew only the baptism of John." What does that mean? What that means is he understood Jesus to a point, but he didn't understand the coming of the Holy Spirit.

    21:55-21:56

    That's what he's saying.

    21:56-21:58

    He knew about John's baptism.

    21:58-22:01

Jesus said, "I'm going to baptize you with what?

    22:02-22:06

The Holy Spirit, right?" So he knew about the whole, you get dunked in water, sign of repentance, right?

    22:06-22:08

We still do that as a church.

    22:08-22:11

He didn't know about the coming of the Holy Spirit.

    22:11-22:12

    Why?

    22:13-22:17

This was the day before the internet and before CNN.

    22:17-22:22

And it took some time during this first century for news to travel about what happened.

    22:23-22:27

And apparently, Apollos was busy doing his thing and he didn't get the memo, right?

    22:29-22:31

So he was teaching accurately, it just wasn't complete.

    22:32-22:33

He didn't really know the rest of the story.

    22:35-22:48

Look at verse 26, it says, "He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him," remember them, the tent makers that we met last week, became really good friends with Paul.

    22:48-22:58

It says, "But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, "they took him and explained to him "the way of God more accurately.

    22:59-23:06

"They took him aside and they taught him." That is Aquila and Priscilla didn't publicly rebuke him.

    23:07-23:12

They didn't storm in pointing a finger in Apollos' face.

    23:13-23:15

    You are wrong, heretic!

    23:15-23:20

"You need to repent of your blasphemies." They didn't do that.

    23:22-23:25

They didn't do the passive aggressive thing that we do in our day.

    23:25-23:27

I don't agree with that, so I'm going to write a little blog about that.

    23:29-23:31

I'm going to tweet about that.

    23:31-23:36

I have 140 characters or whatever to express my dismay at Apollos' teaching.

    23:37-23:38

    They didn't gossip about Apollos.

    23:39-23:40

    They didn't ostracize him.

    23:40-23:41

    What did they do?

    23:41-23:43

    They did the loving thing.

    23:43-23:44

    They pulled him aside.

    23:44-23:55

They're like, "Hey, hey, you are such a good speaker, but did you know there's more to the story?" They pulled him aside and they taught him.

    23:55-24:04

And in cases like this, the loving thing to do is to confront someone.

    24:06-24:08

So let's talk about confronting someone.

    24:09-24:14

Because when I say confronting, you're going to be in one of two camps.

    24:15-24:18

Some of you are gonna go, "Ah, confronting, no, no, no, no.

    24:18-24:19

    I don't like to confront.

    24:19-24:20

    I hate confrontation.

    24:20-24:21

    I'm a middle child.

    24:21-24:37

I don't confront, not my thing." Then there's going to be some of you that are like, "Yeah, yeah, tell us Pastor Jeff, how we can get people's faces." And both of those are wrong, okay?

    24:38-24:40

I read a book many years ago.

    24:41-24:43

This is going to sound a little cheesy, but the word always stuck with me.

    24:43-24:48

But the author of the book says, instead of calling it confronting, we should call it care-fronting.

    24:49-24:53

Let's change the word because it better reflects the attitude with which we're going after this.

    24:54-24:55

We're doing this because we care.

    24:57-24:57

    We're care-fronting.

    24:59-25:00

    All right?

    25:01-25:03

The loving thing to do is confront.

    25:03-25:09

I'm going to give you a couple of myths about confrontation, and I'm going to give you a couple of tips straight from the text here.

    25:10-25:12

First of all, the myths about confrontation.

    25:12-25:14

    Quickly, these are myths.

    25:14-25:20

I feel like I'm going to share these things to give us a whole balanced meal here.

    25:21-25:22

    Myths about confrontation.

    25:24-25:28

First myth about confrontation, I must confront everything I don't like.

    25:29-25:30

That is a myth, all right?

    25:30-25:31

    That is a myth.

    25:31-25:34

You do not have to confront everything you don't like.

    25:34-25:43

Only when there are sin issues, like 1 Corinthians 5, or there's false or incomplete teaching in the church like we see here.

    25:45-25:48

Be careful not to be the preference police.

    25:51-26:01

Some people think it's their job, they've been duly deputized by the Lord, the police style of worship, dress, the font in the bulletin.

    26:02-26:04

I'm going to set these people straight.

    26:04-26:07

You don't need to confront everything that's not your preference, okay?

    26:09-26:10

    That's a myth.

    26:11-26:13

Second myth is confrontation is not loving.

    26:15-26:23

You know, I would say something to him, but I really like him, and I just feel like it's harsh to like, that's a myth.

    26:25-26:27

The most loving thing you can do is watch somebody's back.

    26:29-26:34

It's unloving to not confront when confronting is appropriate.

    26:34-26:39

It's unloving to care more about the person walking in tune with you than that person walking in tune with God.

    26:40-26:40

    Okay?

    26:43-26:46

Thirdly, here's a myth, confrontation equals judging.

    26:47-26:49

    You know that's coming, right?

    26:49-26:51

If you confront somebody like, "Hey, look, you know what?

    26:51-26:52

"I gotta talk to you about this.

    26:52-26:59

"This is just something I see in your life "and I just wanna talk to you about it." People like to play a couple of cards here.

    26:59-27:02

First of all is the Matthew 7 judgment card.

    27:02-27:03

    You're judging me.

    27:03-27:04

    You're judging me.

    27:05-27:06

Bible says don't judge and you're judging.

    27:06-27:07

    You are sinning.

    27:08-27:09

    Somebody should confront you.

    27:11-27:13

Or they pull out another card, the John 8 card.

    27:14-27:17

He who is without sin, he who is without sin.

    27:18-27:19

    They cast the first stone.

    27:21-27:25

And look, we talk about judging when the Bible talks about judging.

    27:27-27:29

Jesus said not to judge hypocritically.

    27:30-27:35

Now judging has to do with a person's character, not a person's conduct.

    27:36-27:37

    Two different things.

    27:39-27:44

If I'm pointing out that something you are doing is sinful, that is not judging you.

    27:44-27:47

That is saying the thing that you're doing is sinful.

    27:49-27:54

Judging you is saying something like this, you're a horrible person because you think that way.

    27:55-27:56

    Now I'm judging you.

    27:57-28:00

But if I say, hey, you shouldn't think that way, Those types of thoughts are sinful.

    28:01-28:04

I'm not judging you, I'm saying your thoughts are sinful.

    28:04-28:04

    Do you see the difference?

    28:05-28:07

Okay, so I don't wanna hear the whole you're judging me.

    28:07-28:09

    No, I'm not judging you.

    28:09-28:14

Sin is sin, we point out sin, we point out conduct without condemning the person.

    28:15-28:16

    That's the difference.

    28:17-28:20

    But confrontation is not judging.

    28:20-28:23

Some people play that card because that way nobody can say anything to them.

    28:24-28:26

Don't say anything to him, he'll think you're judging him.

    28:28-28:29

    We watch each other's backs.

    28:30-28:33

So tips for confronting, very quickly, right from the text here.

    28:33-28:35

First of all, do it informed.

    28:36-28:37

Write these down, tips for confronting.

    28:37-28:39

First of all, do it informed, informed.

    28:44-28:51

There's a rumor I think I might have heard that, you know, if you're gonna confront somebody, get your facts straight first, right?

    28:52-28:53

    Secondly, do it privately.

    28:55-28:57

Jesus talked about that in Matthew 18.

    28:57-28:58

we see it put in practice here.

    28:59-29:01

Do it privately. They pulled him aside.

    29:02-29:08

"Hey, we've got to talk to you about something." So do it informed, do it privately, thirdly, do it biblically.

    29:09-29:12

Meaning, have the truth in hand.

    29:13-29:23

I'm sure that's what Aquila and Priscilla did, to say, "Look, you're teaching some things about Jesus, but let me tell you the rest of the story." But they did it according to the truth of God's Word.

    29:23-29:23

    Do it biblically.

    29:25-29:40

In these situations like Apollos, somebody that's from a sincere heart trying to seek the Lord, listen church, you can either destroy someone or you can empower someone by the way you come alongside that person.

    29:42-29:47

Hypothetically, what do you think would happen to Apollos if Aquila and Priscilla pulled him aside and just like trashed him?

    29:48-29:50

Or even publicly just trashed him?

    29:50-29:51

You don't know what you're talking about.

    29:51-29:53

You should shut your mouth until you learn the Bible.

    29:54-29:57

Apollos might have been like, I don't know if I'm ever gonna be qualified.

    29:57-30:04

Or he might, I don't know, it didn't happen hypothetically, but it happens in the church a lot.

    30:05-30:07

Church is the only army that shoots their own wounded.

    30:09-30:21

You can have somebody from a sincere heart trying to serve the Lord, needing some assistance in growth, and you can come along and just stamp them into the dirt by the way that you confront them.

    30:22-30:27

Or, like in this case, you can empower someone.

    30:28-30:29

    You can empower someone.

    30:31-30:36

One of the main ways that God works is through people, through you.

    30:38-30:39

Be someone who helps people grow.

    30:40-30:42

Like, well, how do we know it took?

    30:43-30:44

How do we know it took for Apollos?

    30:44-30:46

    Well, look at verse 27.

    30:48-30:49

    Last point.

    30:49-31:00

Verse 27 says, "And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him.

    31:02-31:17

When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the scriptures that the Christ was Jesus." So apparently it's stuck, right?

    31:17-31:26

Because he was encouraged, They wrote a letter of recommendation for him, and he went, it says in your Bible, he went to Achaia.

    31:26-31:29

The capital is a place you're more familiar with, it's Corinth.

    31:30-31:32

    He went to Corinth, okay?

    31:34-31:36

Which was the capital of Achaia.

    31:37-31:43

And when you get to 1 Corinthians in your Bible, you find that Apollos became a major church leader.

    31:45-31:47

    So here's the third point.

    31:48-31:53

Because we're a work in progress, you're going to accept others' convictions, you're going to assist those who need to grow.

    31:54-31:55

The third point is for you.

    31:57-31:57

    Always be teachable.

    31:59-31:59

    Always be teachable.

    32:02-32:05

We saw previously that Apollos had a pretty big rep.

    32:07-32:10

Remember it said Apollos was an eloquent man.

    32:12-32:13

    It's a very rare word.

    32:13-32:16

I think this is the only time it's used in the New Testament actually.

    32:16-32:24

and the best understanding of what the original meaning of this word is means that he was a man of words, or he was a man of ideas.

    32:25-32:27

    He was an eloquent man.

    32:29-32:34

And here I think the translation is a little toned down, but it says he was competent in the Scriptures.

    32:35-32:45

Actually, that word "competent" in the Greek is "adunimous," which is where we get the English word "dynamite." It means explosive and powerful.

    32:46-32:48

He was powerful in the Scriptures.

    32:50-32:53

So here's this eloquent man, this man of ideas.

    32:53-32:56

Here's this man who was dynamite in Scriptures.

    32:58-33:03

But here's the best thing that was said about Apollos, that could be said about Apollos.

    33:03-33:04

    He was teachable.

    33:06-33:20

Because a couple of tent makers, a couple of tent makers pulled him aside "and said, 'Man, good, but let's do better.'" That's teachable.

    33:21-33:21

    That's teachable.

    33:22-33:26

It would have been very easy for somebody like Apollos to say, "Who are you to tell me?

    33:26-33:27

"Do you know who I am?

    33:28-33:30

    "I got a reputation here.

    33:30-33:31

    "People know me.

    33:31-33:33

"I'm the greatest speaker in the area.

    33:33-33:34

"And what do you two guys make?

    33:35-33:36

"You two guys make tents, really?

    33:37-33:38

    "Like who camps, really?

    33:38-33:43

"And you're making tents?" He was teachable.

    33:44-33:53

And it doesn't matter how skilled you are or what you've accomplished, if you aren't teachable, if your heart isn't open to learn, you're going to hinder your own walk with Christ.

    33:54-33:54

    You're going to hinder it.

    33:57-34:07

A huge danger sign for you is when you get to the point that you come to church to critique, not to learn.

    34:08-34:14

And I'm not saying you shouldn't always evaluate things under the filter of the Word of God is what I'm saying true?

    34:15-34:16

Does it line up with God's Word?

    34:17-34:18

I'm not saying that at all.

    34:19-34:36

But when you graduate yourself to the point that you haven't learned anything in church in the last six months, but let me tell you several things that I've noticed wrong about church, that's a huge danger sign because you're determining that you're unteachable.

    34:37-34:38

    I'm unteachable.

    34:38-34:39

    I've learned it all.

    34:39-34:40

    I know it all.

    34:41-34:45

I don't come to church to learn, I come to church to set them straight.

    34:46-34:46

    That's a problem.

    34:48-34:49

    So are you teachable?

    34:49-34:50

I'm going to give you a quick test here.

    34:50-34:52

These are yes or no questions, one through seven.

    34:52-34:53

    Yes or no?

    34:55-34:58

Jot down your answers, one through seven, yes or no.

    34:58-34:59

    Are you teachable?

    35:01-35:05

Number one, I am aware of my weaknesses.

    35:07-35:08

I am aware of my weaknesses.

    35:08-35:37

true statement for you, yes or no? I'm aware of my weaknesses. Number two, I am not afraid to seek help. Number three, I try to learn from criticism. Somebody criticizes you, the first thing you should do is ask, is what they're saying true? That's the first thing you should ask. Instead of getting defensive, and who do you think you are? Why are you saying that to me? First thing you should say to See yourself, is that true?

    35:37-35:38

Is there some truth in what he's saying?

    35:40-35:45

Number four, I admit when I am wrong and I take responsibility when I fail.

    35:47-35:48

Is that you, yes or no?

    35:49-35:53

Number five, I am aware I don't know everything.

    35:55-35:56

    I am aware I don't know everything.

    35:59-36:01

Number six, I am always looking to learn new things.

    36:03-36:04

I'm always looking to learn new things.

    36:07-36:10

Number seven, I invite others to give me feedback.

    36:11-36:11

    That's a big one.

    36:11-36:14

I invite others to give me feedback.

    36:15-36:16

Hey, what'd you think about that?

    36:16-36:17

How could I have done that better?

    36:19-36:20

Yes or no for those questions.

    36:21-36:25

Now, if you have a lot of nos on the list, that's a very bad sign, honestly.

    36:26-36:33

But if you have a lot of yeses on your list, and you are Apollo's like, all right?

    36:34-36:35

    That's a good thing.

    36:37-36:39

As I close the worship team, they make their way up.

    36:39-36:47

I just wanna ask us, imagine church as we talk about the fellowship in the body.

    36:47-36:52

Imagine what kind of a church we would be, Harvest Bible Chapel, Pittsburgh North.

    36:52-37:07

What kind of a church we would be If you have a heart to accept other people's convictions, even if it's not yours.

    37:09-37:09

    Let's say, you know what?

    37:09-37:12

I don't agree with them on that, but that's okay.

    37:12-37:12

    Not a sin issue.

    37:13-37:15

Not a sin issue, not a doctrine issue.

    37:15-37:17

We're just gonna have to agree to disagree on that.

    37:19-37:27

What kind of church would we be if we had a heart to accept other people's convictions and trust that the Lord was going to grow them as a work in progress as He's growing me.

    37:28-37:36

What kind of church would we be, Harvest Bible Chapel, if we have a heart to help those who need to grow?

    37:37-37:42

If we see people like Apollos in our midst and say, "Wow, that guy's got such a sincere heart.

    37:42-38:00

Wow, that lady, she really has a heart to work and she can do better and I want to try to help her get to the next level." What kind of church would we be if we had a heart to help those who need to grow, what kind of church would we be?

    38:01-38:06

Harvest Bible Chapel, if we have a heart to learn from others.

    38:07-38:10

Everybody in here has something to teach me.

    38:11-38:15

What would this church be if we came in here saying, I have a heart open to learn?

    38:17-38:19

I'll tell you what kind of church we would be.

    38:20-38:22

    We'd be an unstoppable fellowship.

    38:23-38:23

    Let's pray.

    38:24-38:31

Father in heaven, I thank You for the truth of Your Word.

    38:31-38:42

And I pray, Father, as this passage really talks about some of the relational things that happen in the church, the horizontal relationships that happen here, Father, I pray for this church.

    38:44-38:49

And Father, I see many of the things that we've been talking about today, I see them being lived out.

    38:51-38:57

But of course, Father, every single one of us and as a church collectively, we have room to grow because we are a work in progress.

    38:58-39:03

So I pray, Father, that our hearts are open to the kind of work that you wanna do in our lives.

    39:06-39:21

Father, we are as a church want to today embrace the glorious truth that you began a good work in us in Jesus Christ and you have promised that you're going to finish it.

    39:23-39:31

Let that be a grace that we embrace for ourselves, and let that be a grace that we embrace for others.

    39:33-39:37

We pray these things in the mighty and strong name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

    39:39-39:39

    Amen.
